A more recent theory, put forth by Paul Maclean, a brain researcher at the National Institutes of Health, is that the brain can be divided into three sections, each with a unique function, starting from the bottom up. He found that the basic brain, at the bottom, is the oldest (in terms of evolution) section of our brain, and is associated with basic animal instincts such as the fight-or-flight reflex. The second section is the limbic system, which is responsible for feelings and emotional attachments. Above that is the neocortex, the newest section of the brain, which Maclean and others credit with higher thought. |

Regardless of which brain section you rely on at any particular time, each one learns information and adapts to it in a different way. Opinions differ on what part of the brain houses the intuitive abilities. Some people say that they are situated in the basic brain, which is linked with instinctual responses. Recent research suggests that intuition, with its ability to see in visual, symbolic images, is positioned in the neocortex, the higher, and more highly developed, area of the brain. |

The human brain

It's no wonder that
some scientists
believe that our
hidden powers of
psychic ability lie
within this labryinth. |
