to create change by raising consciousness. It also suggests a way that prayer may work to provide a powerful source of healing.
Gaia of the Mind
One theory that seems to support the idea that many minds are connected is the Gaia theory. The ''Gaia Hypothesis," proposed by James Lovelock in the 1940s, proposed that the earth is actually its own entity, an enormous biological system that creates a single living organism. This idea infers that the earth has one shared mind that works together, even without people being aware of it. You can compare it to a beehive. Thousands of tiny insects all work together to form a common world of their own, even without knowing what their sisters on the other side of the hive are doingmuch less what you, me, or the leader of China are up to. In a way, many of us humans are like that.
According to the principles of evolution, the earth as a living organism would do whatever is necessary to ensure its own survival. The idea that it "consciously" controls everyone's thoughts sounds far-fetched. However, people's minds may respond to the earth's needs in a unified way, just as the human body's nervous system may automatically respond to an emergency (or any stimulus) without requiring the brain's conscious thought. In effect, human minds may respond in certain ways, following trends or thought patterns, without making a fully conscious decision to do so. And this could be called psychic ability or intuition.
Your Brain: Psychic Central
Where does psi live? What is it, in a physical sense? It's possible that psi is another aspect of brain function, an additional perceptive sense that is somehow based in your physical brains. It's also possible that psi is a bridge that connects your physical brain to a nonlocal mind.
Psychology, in particular, can gain many new inroads through the continued study of psi. Because psychic ability is associated with the mind, the brain is a logical place to start studying what may be going on. And because psychology and neuroscience are relatively new sciences, every day scientists are learning more about how they interconnect.
The Split-Brain Theories (Ouch!)
In recent decades, one of the most profound discoveries in medicine won the Nobel Prize in 1981 for Roger Sperry. This brain researcher went beyond the conventional wisdom that the left hemisphere of the neocortex, responsible for reason and analytical thinking, reigned supreme in the brain. He revealed that the right hemisphere makes an equally important contribution, providing the power of intuition, as well as imagination, artistic creativity, and free association.
