Recently, certain scientists suggest that consciousness itself is a field. Like gravity, the field of consciousness has certain properties, including a force comparable to that of gravity. It could be that this force is similar to Jung's idea of the collective unconscious.
Research in this area of field consciousness is new, but ongoing. Psi scientists are researching the theory that when many minds focus on a single topic, they result in a measurable effect. Experiments have focused on showing that normally random results, and even physical effects, can change when many people focus their minds on a single event. As we discussed briefly in Chapter 4, researchers in this area have been able to measure results by the use of random-number generators (RNGs), computerized machines that indicate a definite change from randomness to order during moments of intense mental focus by an individual, or many, minds. This occurs when the machines, which normally spew out ones and zeroes in random patterns, suddenly start to spit out a higher ratio of a single numberseemingly in response to concentrated thoughts and focus of nearby minds.

In recent years, many labs across the world have been studying the phenomena of group mental focus. Dean Radin, Ph.D., as Director of the Consciousness Research Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has both conducted studies and gathered data from many other studies to show the effects of field consciousness. Events that have been measured vary in their topic of focus, location, and the numbers of people involved, but they show surprising evidence that something occurs when many individuals simultaneously focus on the same event. The point of these machines and the experiments is not to indicate a specific outcome, but a change in randomness. In short, they show that thought alone, without any physical action affecting it, can create order out of chaos.
RNGs have been used to measure the public's focused attention during such well-known events as the Academy Awards in 1995 and 1996, the 1996 Olympics opening ceremonies, Superbowl XXX, and the O.J. Simpson verdictall of which had millions of people viewing and focusing. During these events, random number generators were placed in various locations, such as near TV sets with different-sized groups of people watching them. The RNGs measured significantly high levels of order, meaning that the focusing of so many minds on a single event created an enormous amount of synchronization, or order, in the machines that were designed to maintain randomness.
This information about coordinated thoughts and consciousness may increasingly be put to use by advertisers, governmental leaders, and even casino owners. The potential power of this unity of thought adds a scientific basis to social activists' hopeful efforts
