The point of this process is to let the unconscious creative side of your mind act freely. By doing so, you're likely to receive a symbol or image that gives you insight into an issue that's troubling you or a specific question that you've asked. In addition, some trained artists intentionally seek inspiration using this method to help them produce beautiful pieces of artwork. If that's your aim and you've been trained in a fine art, you may find that this method allows your skill to flow through your hands and into your work without requiring conscious thought. Whether you're an amateur or a fine artist, the point is to be spontaneous and have fun! |

Automatic writing involves a process similar to the one that allows spontaneous drawing to occur. Although pen and paper have been the tools of choice in the past, modern mediums find that a keyboard works just as well. The important part is freeing your hands (and your mind) from conscious mental control, which may be difficult for people who insist on using proper grammar and punctuation. You've certainly got to let that sense of mastery go if you want to tap into your unconscious mind with any success. |

Automatic writing comes in various forms. As we've mentioned, grammar and punctuation are not important. In addition, you may find that the words often run together and you may not be able to recognize the handwriting as your own. Many experts advise that you don't look at your hands at all, except to occasionally check that they're still writing on the paper. |

When you've finished writing, take time to review your work carefully. The writing may begin as loops and curlicues that eventually take shape and form letters and words. They may come as phrases that stand out from other, unclear text or as symbolic words or images (more likely in the case of spontaneous drawing). Certainly, you shouldn't expect to have the Great American Novel on your first go-roundor ever, for that matter. Most messages tend to be private, offering you suggestions for personal improvement. These messages also tend to be direct, factual, and wise. |

In many cases, automatic writing doesn't feel other worldly at all. You might approach it just as you would any type of informal writing. Sit down with your pen and paper, relax, and clear your mind. In fact, this is the perfect time to focus on that favorite project we've talked about before: your psychic journal. |
