The idea underlying much ancient spiritual philosophyincluding those connected with Christian, Jewish, and native American faithsis that a universal life force runs through everything, including each and every person. It fills both the body and the mind, and provides people with the energy and drive to move through their lives. Because this vast force constantly runs through people, it also connects themtheir bodies, minds, and spirits as a single entityto the greater, universal life force that runs through everything surrounding them. In this way, the yogis and Buddhists are accurate when they say, ''All is one." (It sounds like the Three Musketeers were on to this too.) |

Ancient Chinese medicine calls the universal energy that flows through the body, chi. It flows through the body's vital organs, bones, bloodstream, and other parts along a network of pathways called meridians. The body contains 14 major meridians, each of which passes through many parts of the body. |

Although chi cannot be seen, measured, or tested, healers who know how to work with it help move it through the body properly. These people believe that too much or too little chi in a certain body areacreated because of a blockage of the flow of chican lead to stress and eventually disease. Some healers use acupressure or acupuncture to release excess energy that collects at specific points along the meridians. By releasing and directing the flow of chi through the body, they can balance any excesses that cause blockages and build-ups of stress. |
