beast with the European economic community. This and the coming of a world leader as an anti-Christ are part of the Apocalypse. From a literal perspective, they foresee rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem as a step toward Armageddon, which includes World War III. This destruction will be followed by Christ's return, Rapture, Judgment Day, and a thousand years of peace on Earth, with Christ as king.
About 450 years ago, Nostradamus presented many predictions that have since rung true. In fact, for him the third millennium was a favorite focal point for declarations of doom. But, in a sense, one needs to be almost as psychic as Nostradamus was in order to interpret them. Since he recorded his foresights in four-line poems, they can be a bit vague.
Yet certain interpreters explain that Nostradamus predicted that a volcanic explosion occurring in the northern Rocky Mountains before the year 2000 will lead to lots of cold weather across the entire country for years to come. Supposedly, he specifies the last decade of the 20th century as the arrival date for the anti-Christ, as well as an apocalyptic war. A popular prophecy for getting specific is: ''The year 1999, seventh month, a great king of terror will descend from the skies . . ." We can hardly wait!
Madame Blavatsy, the 19th-century founder of theosophy, had a more spiritual focus for her prophecies. She theorized that a group of spiritual leaders, who have lived in the Himalayas and guided humanity's evolution throughout time, would come forward and even start a new culture in America. The modern voice of the the osphists is Benjamin Creme in Great Britain. He has successfully predicted the release of Nelson Mandela, the 1988 earthquake in Armenia, and the cease-fire between Iran and Iraq. He now predicts that a world teacher for the new age will soon present himself, and gain immediate acceptance.
