In recent decades, occasional attempts at fraud have been brought to the public's attention. In the case of metal bending, even young children have got into the conjuring act. In a series of tests at the University of Bath, six children claimed to have the spoon-bending ability of young Uri Geller (see Chapter 22)until they were caught cheating. One child even stood up to bend a spoon underfoot, not realizing she was being observed through a one-way mirror. |

But what will they say when evidence finally arrives that proves psi exists as a natural force? Perhaps the truly safest approach to avoid appearing a fool is to keep an open mind. But even the most open-minded of us may have trouble believing that what happens to some people is actually based in external reality (as opposed to a dream, or simply a need for new glasses). Controlling your own future is a far cry from the conjuring tricks that Randi and others are obsessed with. Rather than focusing on what's not true, we recommend making your own choices about what will be. As authors Gail Straub and David Gershon write in Empowerment: The Art of Creating Your Life As You Want It (Ten Speed Press, 1991), ''What you think and believe will manifest in your life. By becoming adept at intelligently directing your thoughts, you can become adept at creating the life that you want. You can take charge of your destiny." |
