Taking Possession
While feng shui focuses on how the ''spirit" of material objects can interact withand even dominatetheir surroundings, this section talks more about a much different type of dominating spirits. Many people believe that certain not-so-nice spirits exist that can take over a human's body. Others suggest that just part of another spirit may become fragmented and attach itself to a human. Usually that human is someone who is depressed or feeling hopeless. Still others suggest that a person may lose a fragment of themselves, perhaps by remaining overly attached to a person who is no longer part of their lives.

The traditional view of spirit possession is that an evil, inhuman spirit attempts to take over a person's soul in order to bring the soul to the side of evil. People possessed may start to act in a bizarre fashion and report hearing voices, imagining seeing awful beings in mirrors, seeing strange lights or movements, and noticing a haunting phenomena in the home. Evidently, when caused by a malicious spirit, these occurrences quickly escalate in frequency and severity.
In such extreme cases, experts use exorcism to ask unwanted spirits to leave a person. Although this procedure has historically been practiced by religious authorities, such as the Catholic priest in the movie The Exorcist, a new breed of helper has come on the scene in recent years. These are specially trained therapists who use hypnosis and past-life regression to ascertain and aid a client in clearing any negative energy, as far as the spiritual realm is concerned.

Some of these specialists have found that a person with chronic depression or lingering feelings of guilt or despair may be helped by this treatment. Although they may not be overtaken by negative spiritual energy, they experience enough of it that it dampens their spirits. Of course, you should be careful when considering this theory. It's an interesting idea, but should be considered with some caution.
But if you find yourself falling into a familiar habit of fearing something you can't understand, affirmations offer a simple way of facing your fears. If you ever start to feel frightened when thinking about possibly unfriendly visitors, try repeating this affirmation, which comes from the Unity Church. (If the concept or word "God" isn't right for you, feel free to choose the word "universe," "spirit," or whatever feels comfortable for you.)
