The main difference between lucid dreams and astral travel is that with lucid dreaming the subject fully realizes that he is dreaming, whereas as in astral travel, he feels that he has actually left his body. With a lucid dream, the subject begins the experience when he is clearly asleep; whereas astral travel can actually begin from a very relaxed awakened state. |

As we say with all of the other experiences we have discussed in this book, write down what you experience. You can keep any astral travel information in your psychic journal, or a separate dream journal if you prefer. |

A special type of mental projection, which lends proof to the idea of body doubles, is bilocation. This occurs when a personwho is currently living and breathingappears in two places at once and is equally ''solid" in both places. They appear to be doing normal activities and may even speak to you. Historically, these travels were reported to occur when a person was not able to leave home but somehow "traveled" to a faraway locale to give an important message. More recently, Machaelle Small Wright in her book Dancing in the Shadows of the Moon (Perelandra, 1995) claims that she lives in two separate realities simultaneously, as two separate personalities living in two different time periods. |

Instances of bilocation tend to occur with people who are mentally active, so full of ideas so that their minds are "divided." The idea is that someone may be thinking of one thing and doing another, causing his or her physical body to be in one place and the double to appear in another. Generally, bilocation is "accidental"; it cannot be controlled, or induced, in the way that astral travel can. In some cases, this occurs only as clairvoyance, when a person sees someone's unreal image as though it is actually there. In such a case, the image is projected by the "sender" rather than initiated by a clairvoyant receiver. |

Experts at astral travel tell fascinating stories of their experiences. Some prearrange to meet fellow travelersand compare notes the next day. Others travel to secret realms where they visit inner sanctuaries to study deep, spiritual insights. They can meet with teachers who help them learn, or spend hours researching ancient texts in unknown languages. And when they wake up, their clocks show that only a few minutes have passed. |
