To begin with, the channeler offers an invitationeither through feelings or thoughts to the spirit world. No specific words need to be spoken (like the cartoon that says, ''Hocus Pocus dominocus! The Spirits are about to speak!"). Some channelers may have certain phrases or rituals that they prefer to repeat in their minds, as a way to prepare themselves. In most cases, they simply express their intention to connect. Remember, a lot of contact with spirits is telepathic: Any words formed would more likely occur in silence and be transmitted telepathically. |

Once a channeler opens himself up to receiving a message, he then begins the process of connecting. At this point, the channeler enters an altered state of consciousness, assuming that's his style. If his style is to enter a less changed state, he then opens the energy field that surrounds him to create a form of merging, or opens his mind to telepathic communication while remaining aware of what occurs. |

After establishing a connection, a message starts coming through. At first, the connection may be a bit rough. But as the channeler and spirit begin to merge more completely, the information becomes clearer. If the channeler feels that the connection isn't right, he can ask for further clarification, visualize a better connection, or ask the spirit to stop "transmitting." |

Certain channelers feel that the message is not strictly dictated by the spirit; rather, it is a melding together of the channeler and spirit. And because each channeler is a unique being himself, the message he relays has its own distinct character that is different from that of any other channeler. One analogy that may simplify this idea is that of a translator's work: Although the speaker offers information in a single language and format, each translator may translate it somewhat differently. |

A Beginner's Guide to Channeling |

Channeling is a skill you can learn, just as you're learning to develop other aspects of your psychic abilities. As you learn, though, it's important to remember that everyone has a different experience of what it's like to channel. Your style will depend not only on who your spirit guide or guides turn out to be, but also on your particular energy level, clarity, and focus. You may experience a feeling of expansive energy flowing through you, or a tingling or buzzing feeling throughout your body as you channel. Other channelers report a sense of floating upwards or of seeing lights and colors. |

The message you receive may come in any number of different forms. Guides use images, feelings, words, and concepts to give you information. Many channelers report that the information is simply transmitted telepathically and you "just know" the answer. As a channeler, you are the person who translates the information sent to you from your guide. You may feel as if you've received a big block of unintelligible information and you must search to understand what it means and how it feels. Often, you'll feel the words form in your mind just at the moment you speak them. Or you may find that you're simply present as a vessel for healing energyand words or ideas never come into play at all. |
