Precognition doesn't work as simply as just rubbing a crystal ball and then seeing someone's life pass before your eyes. For many people, precognition is completely unexpected, and certainly wasn't asked for before it occurs. In fact, people often don't know that they've experienced precognition until after their insights come true. |

Precognition can also be hard to pin down because it is experienced in a variety of ways. Among the most common are through the emotions, brief inner glimpses through the mind's eye, or dreams. However, one aspect of precognition seems to stand out as its trademark: the sense of certainty. |

Many people receive a strong sense or feeling that something's coming, but have little information about what it might be. They may recognize a precognitive experience only after the actual event occurs. A precognitive sense or feeling of a future event is called presentiment. A precognition of a negative or unfortunate future event is called a premonition. |

Like telepathy and clairvoyance, precognition tends to involve people on an emotional level, particularly those with close emotional ties. Also like telepathy and clairvoyance, precognition seems to be notable when concerning potentially dramatic or catastrophic moments, which naturally include extreme emotional states. Interestingly, this special ability to sense others' feelings, especially intense ones such as those associated with a crisis, also shows empathic intuitive abilities. |

Whether in regard to others or yourself, a precognitive sense of danger is called a premonition. These forewarnings are an especially common type of intuitive ability for people to experience. A popular theory is that premonitions are an age-old evolutionary device, developed for self-preservation. If premonitions do indeed meet a basic evolutionary need of every individual, does it follow that intuition is an innate ability among everyone, and has evolved as a positive characteristic for survival and growth? That's a question we're all still pondering. |

The warnings that come through premonition usually occur as intense feelings, rather than visions or calmer feelings that accompany a normal precognitive experience. Oddly enough, premonitions usually allow enough time to change the behavior or plans that could cause the trouble. |
