The Difference Between Telepathy and Imagination
If you have a knack for knowing what someone else is thinking, are you a gifted mind reader or just a good guesser? Answering this question is particularly tough when you're already close to the person to whom you're relating. For example, a mother and child have spent so many years together that they may recognize all sorts of unconscious clues and cues about each other's mental states and physical needs without even knowing it. So, how do you sort out cogent guesswork from true psychic ability?
A few characteristics appear to mark most telepathic experiences. For one thing, as we've mentioned, a close emotional connection between the people communicating serves to foster telepathic communication.
Secondly, most telepathy occurs spontaneously in moments of emotional intensity. That is, most people don't sit down and say, ''Let's read our minds." Rather, telepathic moments are likely to occur during times of crisis, when the sender is experiencing strong emotions or sensations.

In general, telepathy seems to work best when transferring emotions, particularly strong ones, rather than thoughts. Another aspect of telepathy worth highlighting is its simultaneous quality: Telepathics share their thoughts at exactly the moment they occurnot before. This is especially common when people sense that someone they know has died. Usually, they experience this knowledge at the person's time of death, and thus they have no opportunity to physically see the person beforehand or to change the circumstances.
