While prophetic dreams in general are more common than most people think, true precognitive dreams are rare. In addition to being documented, they must exactly match what actually happens in the relatively near future. Other types of prophetic dreams occur more often. A foreshadowing dream is less demanding in terms of proof: You must also have a record of date, time, and content of the dream, but the event predicted can resemble the dream in a less specific way and occur not immediately but within a reasonable amount of time. A dream with subliminal awareness must be recorded, but may include just one or two elements that come true within a relatively short amount of time. |

A dream that predicts some clear cut future event is easy to label ''psychic" because it is clearly prophetic. However, most dreams offer messages that are not so easily defined. Rather, they offer hints of deeper meanings, but leave the job of interpretation up to you. These dreams can be divided into general categories, including literal, displacement, and symbolic. |

Another category of psychic dream is the literal dream. These dreams present information in literal, or actual, images. This information may come in the form of a visual image or verbal phrase that stands out and thereby helps you recall the dream. |

For example, you may dream that a woman wearing a red Santa suit runs up to you saying, "I've lost it." You would be tempted to think this was a symbolic dream telling you to slow down your Christmas shopping effortsuntil you're at the mall one day and the event actually occurs. Even if only one aspect of the dream later transpires in real life, such as seeing a woman in a Santa suit or hearing someone say, "I've lost it," this dream still qualifies as a literal dream. |

Another sort of psychic dream is the displacement dream. In this type of dream, a literal image appears but in a different setting than it would be in real life. For example, you might dream that your mother gets a flat tire and has to walk home from the grocery store alone. After the dream you call her, concerned. She's fine, but tells you about her neighbor who had a flat and had to walk home from the grocery store. The event did occur, but the lead character was displaced (fortunately for your mother!). |

Still another type of psychic dream is the symbolic dream. Although all dreams seem symbolic, these dreams gain added significance once the passage of time reveals their insightful images. For example, you could be searching for the best way to treat your back pain, which doesn't seem to be getting any better.
