Its practitioners learn the basic hand positions of reiki, but the ability to use it is transferred, rather than taught, to the student by the reiki master. The ability to use reiki is not dependent on intellectual capacity or spiritual development, and thousands of people have already learned to use it.

The source of this healing is hinted at in its name, which has Japanese origins. Rei can be interpreted to mean ''universal" in the sense of all-present, or it can mean "spiritual consciousness," implying that its source comes from God or the Higher Self, and thereby knows all about each person, the person's problems, and where healing is needed. Ki is the same as chi, the life force that directly relates to how healthy a person is. If one's force is low or blocked, he or she is vulnerable to illness. If it's high and freely flowing, he or she is less prone to illness. It runs through every aspect of one's life, including emotions, thoughts, and spiritual life. Ki also is believed to be the source of psychic ability and healing.
While the practice of reiki does not require belief in any particular spiritual beliefs, it does involve principles of improving oneself and promoting harmony with others. These tenets are intended to help people understand that healing comes through the spirit, and thereby benefits from self-realization that leads to spiritual growth.
