Throughout the ages, every civilization has demonstrated a belief in a power beyond itself, beyond the human realm. The tremendous urge to understand this power has inspired artists and writers in every century since the dawn of time. Early cultures searched for gods in nature. This search led to great works of art, whole schools of philosophy, and to the doctrines of the world's religions.
Why are people so eager to get to know God? Of course, everyone wants to be a better person by getting in good with the one upstairs. But there's probably more to it than that, becauseface ithuman nature tends to be just a bit self-serving. What everyone also wants is an insider tip on what's coming up next, whether it's where to make your first million or where you'll spend your time in eternity. This desire may explain why the search for the divine tends to be deeply intertwined with divinationthe practice of foretelling future events through supernatural means, prophecy, or intuition. In fact, ''divine" and "divination" share the same root, which means "pertaining to god." When it comes to psychic phenomena, divination refers to seeing the future in three ways: through the supernatural, by prophecy, or with intuition. We'll show you what we mean in this chapter.
