Webster's dictionary defines an aura as ''a subtly pervasive quality or atmosphere seen as emanating from a person, place, or thing." (Is this intended to be vague, or what?) In intuitive-speak, the aura is a vibrating field of energy (often perceived as light) that pulses around and through the body at all times. In religious renditions of sacred events, you've seen them painted as haloes around holy heads. |

Basically, the aura is a luminous atmosphere that surrounds all living things. Many believe that this energy both enters and leaves through the vortices of the chakras. The energy is denser the closer in to the body you get and thus perceptible, but it extends outward in infinite directions and comes in from infinite distances as well. |

Many believe that this field around the body is an electromagnetic field, which may even conduct electricity through the water contained in the body. While surrounding the body, this field protects you and also helps you sense others' feelings and allows others to perceive your true self. The aura can be perceived through feeling, "sensing," or seeing. |

Some people are wired visually to see auras more easily, while others can feel or sense them. Even people who don't seem to have a natural inclination for seeing auras can learn to do it, with practice. We provide a few exercises in this chapter to help you get started with seeing or sensing auras, but first let's talk about what's not an aura. |

Two optical effects are often mistaken for the aura. These are floaters and after-images. Floaters look like clear dots connected by thin lines. These commonly appear when you've been in bright light, especially sunlight. Basically, they're dead cells floating around in your eyes and showing up against a bright background. |

After-images often appear when you've been staring at something for a long period of time. For example, if you keep your eyes focused on someone for a long time and then move your eyes away, you may see the person's lingering shape, often in an odd fluorescent color. You may be tempted to think you've had a revelatory glimpse of insight, but don't get too excited just yet. When you actually witness an aura, you'll know you've seen the real thing. |
