You have half the idea right. Yes it distributes power to the front and rear, but it ALLOWS slip if one side (front or rear) is stationary or otherwise not the same speed as the other. try cornering in a jeep with 4WD engaged, they dont have center diffs. hop-hop-hop-etc. Subaru doesn't do that because the diff allows the front and rear to move at different speeds.
