So let's think of symbols as metaphors. The rich images of metaphors open up meaning rather than close it down. Instead of standing for just one thing, a metaphor invites you to think and feel the connection. A train can be a train. Or it can be something else entirelyfrom the one you took with your Grandma when you were a child, to the lonesome whistle blowing all those miles down the track. Your symbols, in other words, are yours.
Tarot for the 21st Century
Let's talk about virtual reality. Sometimes we wonder if people still need peoplein the flesh, that is. Is it possible that someday soon we'll communicate only via computers with no human contact at all?
Of course, while it's hard to say for certain if people will ever rely solely on computer connections instead of human ones, we do know that we're in greater need of spiritual insight than ever before. This should be no surprise: Our society is far more complex than societies 300, or even 50, years ago. And these days, there's a drive to take care of our material conditions first and our spiritual development second.
The truth is that all worship is a form of spiritual development, and there's a constant need to maintain a balance in our lives between the material world and the spiritual world. Sometimes that's not so easywith college for the kids, or the higher stress levels that come with trying to get things done for every member of the family. Employment changes happen more rapidly than in years past, too.
In short, most of us feel as if we've been speeded upor as if, at the very least, the world is moving along more quickly than it used to. Tarot has its place in the 21st century, because it can help us maintain a positive approach to the many changes and transitions that the century is sure to bring. Tarot helps us to keep our spiritual center and gives us the faith that everything does happen for a reason. Life is a continuum.
