Sound confusing? Well, like most methods of divination, I Ching gives you a certain amount to work with, then leaves the rest up to you. Mainly, the interpretation of what the message means is left to youwhich is where your intuition comes in. After obtaining a reading, you may instantly recognize what you can learn from it. That's the familiar form of clairsentience: knowing without knowing how you know. On the other hand, you may perceive the message as a riddle. You will need to take time to ponder it and question yourself. In this way, you can learn to look at the situation from many perspectives, and to better understand your own motivations. |

Charting the Stars: Astrology |

A similar approach applies to another ancient form of divination: astrology. This is a way of studying the stars and planets, and applying the patterns of their movements to human actions. It is based on the idea that all action is reflected in similar actions on parallel levels or spheres. |

Astrology has been compared to mapping the cosmos. The same cosmos that contains the movement of the stars and planets contains the pattern of human movement and action. To give an accurate reading an astrologer usually needs to know the exact time of your birth. Your birth certificate will have your time of birth if your parents don't remember. Often the hospital where you were born will have the records if you don't have a birth certificate. Where you were born also has an impact on how an astrologer casts your chart. A good astrologer has ways to work around the lack of this information if you don't have an accurate record. |

By knowing the exact time and location of a person's birth, a map can be made to show how they relate to and interact with the cosmos, as well affairs on a smaller scale. An astrologer uses the moment of birth as a center point to create a map, or chart. This 360 degrees on the chart are divided into twelve sections, or houses, that include various aspects of a person's life, such as his or her philosophy, family, intimate relationships, career, hopes, and friends. (On the following page we give you an example, using Oprah Winfrey's chart.) |
