Houck reports that about 85 percent of the thousands of people at his parties achieved success at a Kindergarten bending level, the first of a series of experiments that go up to Graduate bending level. From these experiments, as well as others, he postulates that the benders find a period of a few seconds when the metal loses its structure long enough to become mangled. He describes a feeling of warmth that often comes from the flatware when it has reached this point of readiness.
Houck plans his parties to build excitement about these metal bending exercises. During the process, he actually encourages the bender and other party goers to make noise. The idea behind adding noise to the equation is to distract the bender's conscious mind and allow the PK force to work without interference. It also helps focus the other party goers (but not too intently) on the event.
Will Wishing Make It So?
Clearly, creating PK effects is more complex than simply wishing hard, clapping, or clicking your heels together. And yet, there's a certain side of it that requires not trying. The idea of letting go of the focus often comes up when discussing what makes PK work.
As in other areas where psychic skill comes into play, experts recommend achieving a state of relaxed concentration. In this state, which often occurs during meditation or hypnosis, the rational mind takes a backseat, allowing a deeper level of consciousness to direct the types of thought, or perhaps energy, that pass through one's mind. This process is quite different from wishing, which is based on a rational effort to direct very focused thoughts.
Levitation: Getting Off the Ground
If you thought astral travel in Chapter 21 sounded strange, what sounds truly fantastic is levitationan activity that seems to exist only in Saturday morning cartoons. And yet the tradition of objects or people floating, or even flying, goes back a long way. For millennia, frequent flyers have included shamans, yogis, saints, sorcerers, and mediums.

There aren't many hard and fast rules about how levitation works. It can be spontaneous, but expert levitators can control it at will. The experience may last for just moments or for several hours. At séances where mediums actually become airborne, participants discover that touching the medium instantly causes their return to the ground. (Moral: It pays to levitate high above the crowd or very low to the ground.)
