The Year 2000 and Beyond
Now that pure logic has reached its pinnacle through computers, and technology has grown more controlledand controllingpeople are expressing a backlash against purely rational thinking. They are exploring new uses for age-old mental abilities, by using intuition for crime control, healing, and personal growth.
In the 21st century, technological expertise and eternal questing may finally combine to tap into sources of power that have not yet been realized. This combined effort is already underway in many research laboratories. Scientists are actively examining brain function during spiritual states, such as meditation, and dream stages, when the unconscious mind comes to the fore. Furthermore, scientists are studying communication between conscious minds, as well as between the mind and body. Curious? You'll learn more in Chapters 4 and 27.
As science reveals many longtime mysteries, people grow even more curious about the riddles they can't answer. And as computers take on many unimaginative tasks, scientists become free to delve more deeply into the aspects of the mind that defy logic and outsmart artificial intelligence.
