After having such an experience, many people have difficulty talking about it. For one thing, it is hard to describe with mere words. Also, many people they talk to cannot understand or believe the experience. And yet the person is changed forever. |

Actor Kirk Douglas is reported to have had a near-death experience when a helicopter he was flying in collided with another aircraft. Douglas, with severe back and head injuries, was left fighting for his life and actually ''died" for a few moments before being resuscitated. He states, "There was never a moment I was as close to God as I was then. I will never take life, things, or people for granted again. I'm more appreciative of being able to open my eyes in the morning and see those I love close by." |

Those who have had an NDE show a dramatic change in their attitudes toward life and death. Surveys of survivors show that those having near-death experiences no longer express a fear of death. They also have a stronger belief in the possibility of an after-lifeor gain one if they previously did not believe in an afterlife. We cannot declare that NDEs prove that life exists after death, but they do suggest that consciousness continues, on some level, after physical death. |

When asked about what the near-death experience taught them, they all share similar answers. They all seem to emphasize the importance of learning to nurture a true and profound love for others. And another lesson is to focus on trying to seek new knowledge, rather than limiting one's views. A person's values also may change: For instance, driving himself to get ahead financially or professionally may seem insignificant in the face of his revelation about the meaning of life. As we have seen, all of these lessons are important ones in the intuitive areas we have explored. Indeed, some who have NDEs report an increase in their intuitive and psychic abilities. |
