When we discuss channeling in this chapter, we're really talking about spirit-to-body contact: In other words, contact between spirits (either those of people once living or spirits that never had bodies) and living human beings. (Please note, however, that there's a difference between spirit-to-body contact and possession, which has a negative context. We explore possession in Chapter 24 and concentrate on the positive aspects of channeling here.) |

All types of spirits are around and among us, and you generally attract those who have similar qualities to your own. If you're a loving person, for instance, chances are you'll attract a loving spirit to you. If you're a practical joker, you might find yourself communicating with a quirky imp. (This could be another aspect of your karma, which is yet another reason to try living in the most positive way you can to help you attract good karma and receive valuable spiritual guidance.) |

The Process of Channeling |

Before you can act as a channel, you must actively seek out guidance from a spirit. Indeed, a basic understanding within the psychic world is that each being, including you, has free will and that no spirit can force another, or be forced itself, to do something against its will. A spirit cannot communicate through a channeler unless the channeler agrees to it; in fact, the spirit must have an actual invitation from the channeler before it can enter. Although most people think that to communicate with a spirit, the spirit must be of someone they know or someone once alive, that doesn't appear to be the case. |

Just as there are different types of spirits ready for contact, so, too, are there different ways to contact them. Although some channelers fall into a deep trance and wake up knowing nothing of what's occurred (as so often depicted in Hollywood), that's not the only process available. Some channelers are fully conscious during channeling and can even pause to attend to some interruption before continuing. In between are intermediary states of altered consciousness that are most effective for other channelers. |
