1. Before you go to bed, get your pen and paper ready beside your bed. Write down tomorrow's date. If you've been keeping a journal, read about the last dream you wrote down.

2. When you're in bed, relax and review your day in reverse. Think about what you did just before going to bed . . . how you got ready for bed . . . what you did this evening . . . coming home from work . . . leaving work . . . what you did at work in the afternoon . . . in the morning . . . and so on. Carry this through until you remember waking up and recalling the dream you had the night before. This process will help you develop a detailed ability to focus backward in time.

3. As you come closer to falling asleep, repeat to yourself continuously, ''When I wake up, I will remember my dream about . . ." If you have clarified what you specifically want to know, insert the question that you would like your dreaming mind to answer. Avoid asking a question with a simple yes or no response.

4. When you awake in the morning, don't move or start thinking about the day ahead. Instead stay relaxed with your body in the same position and your eyes closed. Tell yourself that you want to recall your dream; then allow your mind to drift back to your dream.

5. Once you start to recall your dream, start writing. The idea is to write down whatever you remember immediately so that you're free to move on to remembering new material. If you find that you can't recall anything, be sure to write that down too.
When you look at what you've written, be aware of how you feel and which items you respond to most clearly and strongly. Underline these points, so that you can refer to them if necessary at a later date. These are the points that strike you as most relevant to your situation at this time. You may find that insights from several dreams can be put together to create a clear message for which you are waiting.
