    1. Agnostic is not a noun, it's an adjective that has no base meaning without an adjoining subject. You are callign yourself 'not very'. Well, not very what?

    2. The human brain is so complex that it isn't finished growing in infants until approximately two weeks after BIRTH. It is scientific fact that babies are not capable of anything but base motor function and psychostimulative response prior to that point--they cannot think, remember, log trauma or euphoria as memory in any way, or perceive (this is why circumcision on infants requires no anesthesia--if you can't remember pain as 'pain' after it has occured, it isn't trauma.) The same thing applies to belief structures.

to the theists in the audience: Yes, we all understand analogy. The problem is, you can't draw inferences from analogies. This is even more true when the analogy in question implies that unborn fetuses have the ability to contemplate invisible creatures.

Until children reach a certain age, they don't even know that objects have permanence, that is, they don't phase in and out of existence.

When they get older, they realize that people can't turn invisible, things don't appear out of thin air, etc. By your analogy of the babies belief in Mom, you also seem to be saying that we should be like babies, and have no concept of object permanence. And honestly, that's just silly.

I'm an atheist, yet I like the analogy.
People can get so offended by simple
analogies such as this one. It's incredible.

However, it does not speak for christianity,
but for a God or creator. Since OP named himself
Jesus I believe he was referring to christianity.
This doesn't comply with the picture.
In christianity, life after death is split up into
two sections which we all know; heaven and hell.

I as an atheist see the beginning of the universe
as the creator if I had to choose one. Life after
death is the cycle of life. Once I die my matter
will be found in some other creature. After all,
I might be made up of dinosaur shit

That's all well and good, except that the religious baby, metaphorically in your own analogy, is a genocidal, homicidal, oppressive, selfish maniac who is completely incapable of rational thought.

Face it, if that baby were religious in the sense most religious people are, he'd have ostracized, attacked, abused, enslaved or even murdered his twin, depending on what religion he is emulating

Believing in a god is fine, doing so to the point you think you're special or 'set aside' from the rest of the populous and are okay with atrocities committed by others like you and trying to police the world according to your own sacraments is NOT OKAY.

Life and Death can be both seen and felt. Mother Nature can be both seen and felt. So we know right now that "three" extremely deep and mysterious powers exist in the world (and universe); three that we can directly experience, see, and feel.

KARMA is another thing we can see and feel; it can be called "luck" or simply a "coincidence", but honestly this is a fourth mysterious power that exists as a balance here.

You could go as far as saying Time would be the fifth!

Now we can feel and see all of these in a sense; but we cannot see or feel the being known as Jesus and the one named God. I believe in a Creator which I call "God" but not in the same sense as everyone else.

Religion = Form of Control and Manipulation. Free Thought is banished within these communities; where as an "idea" and a "gathered consciousness" is perfectly fine if you don't belong in those cults.

This is pretty dumb. Just because you don't know something exists because you are inexperienced with it (as the babies with life after birth), does not mean that inferences can be drawn regarding its nature.

Is there life after death? The answer to this is probably no. Is there life after someone falls down a deep hole and we can no longer perceive their whereabouts or hear them? The answer is probably no, but possibly yes.

Just because YOU don't know where someone or something has gone doesn't mean God did it, and just because YOU have a preconceived notion (birth=death) does not make your assertions about what happens afterwards any more valid without evidence.

Accepted colloquialism does not equate to truth, merely 'slang'.

    Agnostic

    A +Gnosis + tic

A - Greek - without; lacking the quality of (example: atheism, areligious)

Gnosis - Greek - certainty, complete and extensiive knowledge regarding (example: diagnosis, prognosis)

Tic - Greek - transformative particle that makes a noun or subject into an adjective that shares the same characteristics (example simple + tic = simplistic)

This word means "not sure". Although it is most commonly associated with religious belief, it has no direct noun attachment and is generally used as a copout to describe a non-existent 'perfect middle ground'. This use is usually done in ignorance from people who want to elevate themselves as superior to both--a hybrid of the best ideas from each side.

No, you haven't seen Mom? Interesting, because this umbilical cord here is connected to another biological organism. I'm pretty sure this is what keeps us alive. We could test this by disconnecting it and seeing what happens.

Oh, well, I see, that caused you to die. That's unfortunate. This cord must have a purpose. This verifies that there is a larger, more capable being keeping me alive.

I must be gestating inside of it, and thus will be born. I revise my prior theory. I do believe in Mom, but, I think that I will grow to be similar to her one day long after birth, and that this is all part of the process of reproduction.

It is unfortunate that we chose to terminate you in utero in the name of science, but, your idiocy forced us to do so. Good thing I won't have a Christian brother though. That would have been a pain.

religions offer people who are imcompetent of creating their own ideas a sort of "template" for living. They are like developers and we are supposed to be consumers. But it's the not the teaching's fault. The teaching is right.

The problem is people are asshats who don't think, "Should I have sex with this person? Really? Really?"

If you know sex is going to have an element of danger to it, a child or a disease, you're supposed to stop and take that seriously.

My personal feeling, after taking all kinds of different opinions about it over time, based on experience:

    It's about respect.

If you respect yourself, the person you want to fuck, and the consequences of what you're doing . . . probably not going to have any problems.

Sex should be fun, a little risk, it should be worth it.

That's why the church is so deadly against these idiots who say, oh it's okay, sleep with that guy tonight, and a different one next week, and don't take your partner to be more than a living dildo, because you have a condom and an abortion option if that fails.

The church is so misunderstood by its critics.

Again, inside marriage, you'd be surprised at what the church really teaches. The church doesn't want anyone living in poverty. It's a sin to harm a child because you can't care for it.

Let's not open the debate of how it's also a human organization, and a very big one, and there's sometimes some quality control in the clergy that could be handled much better.

But just take it to heart. I don't know about the Protestants, who still seem angry hundreds of years later . . . but the Catholic Church categorically does not hate people.

It's also a religion that is NOT easy to understand inside 5 minutes, so maybe that's where problems also start.

The purpose of those rituals is comfort. They provide comfort. The church has used them for 2000 years now, because they give grieving family reassurance, through the old little silly rituals, that life is okay and stable, and will still move on.

Don't be too hostile to the little things. And you gotta admit, done well, some of those little rituals carry a certain sense of style.

    1: OP is a fag
2: Assuming the intelligence of the baby for the sake of the analogy, we must also assume that it is capable of observation and reasoning which would allow it to deduct the existence of an outside source for nutrition.(remember we're dealing with one smart nigger here)

That makes the baby's situation entirely different than ours since we have yet to see any evidence for the existence of anything beyond the universe itself as our universe seems self contained based on our observations so far.

I do concede that it is possible for other universes to exist entirely separate from ours (after life could be one) but since no scientific necessity exists to assume that, rational people don't believe it to be the case. We would however, as soon as some observable evidence is presented to suggest the existence of an after life.

Dude, first of all, I personally find the idea of diddling a small boy very unpleasant. It's just not sexy.

But what do you expect? Perfection? Compared to what the US government likes to do, the worst the church has to answer is some very lonely gay men acting out.

If your stomach is strong enough to read the material, you'll see that priests don't hurt the boys. They diddle, and that's not cool, but nobody actually got physically beaten or bloodied.

It's a no-win situation where the priest wasn't able to carry the burdens of his priesthood, and the church fucked up, but that doesn't make 2000 years of the church invalid and wrong.

No, it is wrong to think of saints as a 'higher' kind of people.
And that's wrong. If it where simply 'we like you' I wouldn't have a problem. The problem is that catholics believe that saints have become something divine, and they name churches after them, make statues and even pray to them.
IMHO, that comes very close to serving a false god, which the bible strongly forbids.

Agnostic atheist, the stance that there may or may not be a god, but we have no evidence of this god, thus implement Hanlon's razor. Not a belief system.

If evidence is presented to a theist that goes against their beliefs, they do not accept this and close their minds to new knowledge. Same story for a strong atheist.

To think that mankind was created from millions of years of refinement.
And that species went from living in caves, to flying to the moon, and one day further.
Who split the smallest of atoms, and build the tallest of structures.
And all this with our own hands and minds. No devine entity playing some game because he got bored. Just us, standing on our own two feet.
We never got anything we asked for. Our prayers were never answered, but did we lay down in the mud and die? No, we stepped up and took the globe for ourselves, with no holy daddy looking over our shoulder.
We did it on our own, and we will keep going on our own, because we don't need a god. We are better than that.

That argument had just about as much merit as saying that god wasn't feeling pride, it was some goddly emotion that humans can't feel or understand, but totally isn't pride! That is bullshit.

Maybe I should just say "oh the stuff jesus went through sucked it wasnt literal though, he wasnt really beaten and he really didnt die on the cross it was all a metaphor for how bad it sucked". Stop picking and choosing what to make literal and not in the bible when there is no line stating which way to take it. But thats also what helps with the bible, it can interpreted in so many ways and when you are a blind follower then you will ALWAYS be able to twist it so you are right. When you go searching for the truth with an open mind you will find that the bible is FAR from it.

I am still not convinced that there is a god.

Just as they babies cognitive functions were not enough to comprehend the concept of a mother or a world beyond their's, we may not have the intellectual capability to comprehend what god is and life after death.

Just as the beabies have no way to experience the existance of their mother. We have no way to experience the existance of god.

But I would not say checkmate. All this has proven is that god can exist. But it still does not give me good reason to assume he does.

Job . . . he was that nice neighbor that seemed okay, but nobody would accuse him of delusions of grandeur.

Jesus was a problematic prick that both the Romans and his own people fucking hated for being a douchebag egotist. The original poser.

There's no suffering like the suffering of the average guy who is scared to death that if he loses the average shit he has, he'll never get it back. Coz he's knows he isn't all that, no matter how much he argues or complains about it.
