I'm trying to learn Traditional Chinese and it is slowing going. I have Sun Tzu's Art of War Traditional/Engrish and a series of childrens' books about warfare and wilderness survival but i require some sort of TV series Torrent with subtitles. It seems to be the easiest way for me to become conversational in any language without writing out thousands of notes. What chinese TV series' does anon love/hate/or think isn't actually from a culturally dead country.

Traditional Chinese? Conversational? Are you missing something?

Traditional Hanzi is a way of writing words, you can never converse in it.

Plus - breaking news: Taiwan is shit.

Come on, don't be an ass. He probably wasn't referring to the ancient archaic Chinese, just standard Mandarin Chinese, traditional script.

Sorry, nothing to recommend here. I'd watch Chinese TV series, if they weren't light years behind your popular western stuff.

The OP might also need to know that the unabridged art of war and most other classics are written in a form of chinese rarely used nowadays. They may make interesting reading but are useless for learning normal conversation or writing. It's sort of like learning english reading the canterbury tales.

I've heard good things about the drama "Meteor Garden". There's also some uber-popular one at the moment, but I don't know the title. You should stumble upon it if you check a dedicated Taiwanese-drama forum.

as for OP, I was born in taiwan, but moved at a young age so I son't recall much. I don't like shows from taiwan myself, but I suggest the live action Peach Girl.

From what I know about Chinese Television is that its mostly Government-run programming thats pretty much like PBS. Alot of documentaries, educational programmes, kids stuff, some clean old movies, ect. Its not 24-hour videos of chinese soldiers marching or anything, but its pretty dull.

If your looking at educational stuff, thats about as good as your going to get, you could try to find the local news media and watch that.

The Chinese were never known for their edge-of-the-seat modern television. You might want to listen to Chinese radio recordings, which is a little more lax, from what I understand.

good luck.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that Sun Tzu's Art of War is not good for a beginner's chinese reading material. Try their equivalent of Dr. Seuss first.

Well, there's quite a few channels in China, and they designated a particular type of program/theme for each channel, so there's a bit of something for everyone.
All the programs are pretty modern, and in terms of production are more or less on par with Western TV, but yes, I do find Chinese TV pretty dull and unappealling to me.

I reckon modern Chinese film is very good though.
