Moving to AZ Anonymous
Native of Illinois, but due to massive fail around here, I'd like to get away. I've visited Arizona many times, once for three weeks in July. The heat doesn't get to me, in fact it's the opposite; I fucking hate the cold. I'm only attending my local community college, and this semester I'll be finished up with all my general education classes.

Anyone who frequents /trv/ able to help me out with advice on AZ? I'd like to stay in a state that's /k/ friendly, so realistically California, New Jersey, and New York are out. I'm able to handle pretty much any job, though I'd avoid retail if I can help it.

tl;dr college student wondering if AZ is worth moving to.

I live in San Diego and have been to Arizona a number of times. DON'T MOVE THERE. Everywhere sucks balls. It's all FLAT and every city is separated from the next by 30 miles of desert. The only thing you can do out there is construction or work in the hotel business because everyone goes there to see the Grand Canyon. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING?

I was born and raised in AZ, live in L.A. now.

AZ is an OK place I guess, but you'll probably be bored living there. It is a very gun-friendly state though so if that's important to you then there aren't many better places to live. Plenty of places to hunt, lots of open desert to go to and just shoot shit for the fuck of it.

The heat might not be as bad as summertime in other parts of the country where you have 90 degrees mixed with humidity, but it can get pretty damn oppressive 3-4 months out of the year. I lived there for 25 years and never really got used to it. It never cools down either, sometimes it would get to 120 degrees, then the low would be 80 or some shit, no relief.

CONT.

As for individual cities heres the breakdown IMO

-Phoenix: I hate this place, it has no personality to me. It's basically just a big city with no character. Imagine taking L.A., putting it in the middle of the desert and keeping all the negatives like crime (although Phx has a higher crime rate than LA now) gangs, traffic, air pollution...but removing everything that makes LA worthwhile like the beach, weather, nightlife, diversity...that's PHX in a nutshell
-Tucson: College town, can be dead with nothing going on in the summertime. It's a little higher in elevation so the climate is a little nicer than PHX, there's also Mt. Lemmon a short drive to the northeast to get away from the heat if you want to. A lot of parts of it are filled with lazy, flakey hippie types, and it is a fairly liberal town for such a conservative state. Again there's not much to do here unless you're a real outdoorsy-type of person, in that case there's good hiking trails around. It's also a great city to live in if you ride a bike everywhere. This is a good city to retire in
-Yuma: 3rd largest city in AZ, but for god's sake don't live there. Terrible in every way
-Flagstaff: Up in the mountains, gets regular snow in the wintertime, so if you hate cold this place might not be for you. It has a nice small town atmosphere but last I heard the cost of living is rising here due to transplants buying up real estate

In short, its okay if you're coming from IL, but if you're coming from civilization its fail, amirite?

Pretty much. Unless you were sick of big city life and wanted to move to a rural area away from everyone else, there's lots of places like that in AZ.

Or if you wanted to move to a place that has most of the amenities of a big city without feeling like you're in a big city, PHX is perfect for that. It may be the 5th largest city in the US now but it feels more like a giant suburb

Tempe, on the other hand, is an excellent place, especially if you're a college student. Huge economic boon in the area means a lot of construction going up. Mill avenue is a great place for bars. ASU itself I'm sure you can read about elsewhere, but I just finished a history degree there and had no complaints.

ASU is a joke college
srsly its the stand school people joke about when the need a generic shitty school. retards, ex-cons and nigras that couldn't go to USC get their degrees there'

Has Tempe really gotten that bad? I lived in Scottsdale from '98 to '03, and I loved Scottsdale and Tempe. Mesa was always full of Mexicans and AIDS.

you can only go to USC if you're rich and beautiful. consequentially, most people can't get in there.

Also, USC rejects end up going to Loyola Marymount.

How about you move to Texas instead?
