My girlfriend brought up the idea of when I come back from working abroad in India that we go on a EuroTrip staring in the UK and ending in Russia. How expensive can a trip like that get?

When I brought up the thought of how expensive it could be my girlfriend suggested we just go to Amsterdam for a smaller vacation. Now I've heard about how liberal Amsterdam was but could someone with expirence of how things work over there give me some insight?

Also, me and my girlfriend are american citizens and trying to keep the costs below 1k USD, not counting airfare.

I hope you mean 1k each, and not combined, otherwise you're setting yourself up for a rather shitty trip.

Whats a good ballpark range to set up for a trip across europe?

I don't really have enough info from you to answer that. It largely depends on what you want to see when you're over there, and how many cities you plan to stop in. It also depends on whether you want to do more sightseeing in urban or rural locales (hint: you DONT want to see rural Russia).

You dumbass. 1k for them together, excluding the air fare is plenty. Even including the air fare you could spend like three weeks in Europe for that money.

OP: check www.hostelworld.com for cheap and good places to stay. Don't rent a car, use trains and other public transport. In Amsterdam, rent a bike or buy one from a junkie by the central station for 20 euros.

you realize that the dollar is essentially worth nothing abroad these days... when in the UK, double the price of everything to get the price in dollars... I hope you enjoy spending 6 dollars for a beer...

Im trying to plan a three week trip in June to western europe with my girl. I've been looking at airfare from Houston to Paris. Round trip airfare for one is about $1200. Obviously for two that would be $2400.

I estimate that food and lodging for two will be about $50 a day. $30 a day for lodging (sometimes in a dump, sometimes in a nicer place. $20 a day for food (some cheap days and a few nights on the town) For 21 days that will be about $1050.

Two 15-day Eurorail passes for old folks (im 27, shes 26) will be $1282.00.

That comes to a total of $4732 for a three week tour of Western Europe. How do you get under 1k for them together? The Eurorail pass alone puts it over 1k. How did you travel for so cheap?

hitchhiking; couchsurfing

have fun spending over 1200 on train passes. youll need to spend half your trip in trains for that to pay for itself

SD to London roundtrip: $634

3 flights, 1 bus, and 15day youth rail pass = $1255 or $1040 if I take 2 of the flights as red eyes (unless someone can suggest better than flights between London>Prague>Athens<bus>Corfu>Rome?)

+ 27 days lodging and food = 2k?

shit's expensive but not bad I guess to hit 8 countries

Damn, how the fuck do people end up going on Eurotrips if the cost is like 5k USD?

Lets not forget that OP wasn't even limiting himself to western Europe. He said he wanted to end the trip in Russia. I'm not sure how the hell he though he could cover two people with 1k USD.

>Damn, how the fuck do people end up going on Eurotrips if the cost is like 5k USD?

Saving up months ahead of time, and having a real job helps.

30 $US won't be enough for a single bed in a homeless shelter.

20 $US will almost buy you a Happy Meal.

What is a reasonable figure for food for 2 for a day, and lodging for 2? I dont mind sleeping in a hostel and eating from the market 75% of the time.

i went the summer of 06 cuz my brother was covering the world cup for work.
We flew to London 3 days staying in tiny tiny expensive hotel ($10 for cigs), flew to Barcelona 3 days staying w/ fam, flew to Paris for 6 days where linked up w/ two girls from back home and shared an awesome apt, then a train to Amsterdam for 4 days in an awesome apt overlooking the central plaza, flight to prague for 3 days, and train to frankfurt for 2 days to watch the finals.

airfare was about 1100, food and stay (often split four ways in apts) was about 2,800. All in all i spent rought 3,000, staying in very nice apts and eating good food.

untrue. i put my trip on an american express card w/ 1 years 0% interest and 7.9% after that. any1 w/ decent credit can do the same

he was only attending and covering America's run of the games, which was pretty short. Once they were eliminated he had the rest of the tournaments length to run around europe.

1,000 for two people is NOT enough money to travel across Europe.

Since moving over here I've watched the dollar freefall every day. Not only is the exchange rate bad, but most other countries have higher taxes that get nullified for the citizens because of their wages. This makes everything crazy expensive.

For instance, in Scandinavia, it's not uncommon at all to spend 10-20 bucks alone on a lunch. In the UK, the prices don't seem so bad if you think of a pound as a dollar, but then with the conversion rate, you're actually paying double for everything. This adds up very quickly.

You can get by for cheap, sure, by hitch hiking and couch surfing, but even so, things can go wrong. It is much better to scrimp and save months (even years) in advance to ensure you have the necessary funds to cover yourself in case something goes horribly wrong, and to have a bit more smooth vacation. It's nice to not worry so much about money when traveling. Trust me.
