So apparently i'm going to be spending the later half of December in Turkey this year after I have a week in Greece.

Unfortunately for me and my uncultured self, i know very little about Turkey.

Would /trv/ suggest to do when one is in Turkey?
Hell, i might even be there during Christmas... Any epic ideas?

Where in Turkey are you going?

>i might even be there during Christmas
I hope you didn't say this in expectation of like a Christmas celebration there, because that's not going to happen. You will however, see people decorating trees and wearing Santa caps on NEW YEAR'S. Strange, but true.

Istanbul for the most part. But other places are an open possibility. I've been browsing some books lately, but anon always has better ideas than the library.

I'm not christian, nor do i expect there to be any sort of celebration in the area. ...but this New Years thing sounds pretty awesome. Too bad i'll be back home by then.

The historical peninsula is full of shit to see. A few mosques and churches, the archaeology museum, the Grand Bazaar, the Topkap? Palace etc. Then there is the Galata Tower across the Golden Horn. Lots of cafés, bars and assorted shops lined up on Istiklal Street stretching between Galata and Taksim. It's the place to be at night if you're into that. Walk or take the bus down to Be?ikta? from Taksim, Dolmabahçe Palace is there, on the bank of the Bosporus. These are all on the European side. Take the Bosporus ferry tour, then on the way back, get off on the Asian side, in Kad?köy. Walk around there, get a drink on Kadife Street. Not much history in these quarters, but I for one enjoy observing locals' daily lives more than anything else when I'm visiting a place. Go see the Princes' Islands, off the Bostanc? coast, again on the Asian side, you can get there by ferry or bus from Kad?köy.

I meant Bostanc? with that, obviously; not the Princes' Islands.

Get ready for a thread of Greekfags and other Eurofags ripping on the Turks and Turkish/Ottoman culture and vice versa

Just don't go to Taksim on new year's eve.

Awesome. A wonderful head start you have given me. Thank you. I'll get to googling those places and find out more. Going to look into that ferry tour. Sounds very interesting. Love to see the locals.

Good advice. Since i have one, i'll be steering clear. :D Many thanks!

ephesus was nice. no idea how far it is from instanbul, though.

It's near Izmir, so I would say 6 hours or so by car. Izmir is a nice place, but not worth the time if you're on a tight schedule I would say. However, I think there are ferries to Chios from there, this needs confirmation though. If OP doesn't have a strict travel plan yet, she might consider doing that.

You're welcome. I'm a local, want to see me?

Mahir, is that you?

Istanbul is an overhyped craphole full off faggots and OP is getting raped.

I am not at all bitter because my girlfriend is moving to Istanbul while I stay in the shitty inland cesspool of boredom with arsenic-water supply.

This is how every Turkish male you'll meet be like. Some though may be less nice and skip the formalities.

Not going alone, doubt i'll get raped :D

I've only really been to Japan, and they arn't exactly notorious for their crime rate so.. thanks for the heads up! I'll do my best not to look too stupid.

Nothing to see there tbh. Only overpriced restaurants and richfags.

Out of all the countries on this planet, you pick turkey? enjoy your rape.

Turkey has a rich history. There are tons of historical sites all over the place.

But if you just want to party, Istanbul is pretty much where it's at...

>overpriced restaurants
oh god. In Ankara you can go to a fairly fancy place and pay about $100 per person, so, bearing that in mind, I went to some place like that in Istanbul with company for an anniversary.

It was the probably the worst food I ate in ages, even I could cook better, I barely ate what I got, it was atrocious - but that feeling was rapidly overshadowed by the almost 2000YTL bill (for two). God I fucking hate Istanbul more with every moment I spend thinking about that peninsular Roman remnant of a shithole.

There have been some kidnappings of, I think, Germans who were brought back to Turkey and Turkey has refused to deal with it. I don't know if it still is in place but child porn is legal there and Istanbul has a problem with production of cp(or maybe not, there was supposed to be a big crackdown about 2 years ago).
Also I lived in Germany for a bit and most of the Turks I met are scum.
Also Greeks and Turks hate each other, more hate from the Greek side though. There are still Kurdish rebels, although it is very unlikely that you'd have much of a problem with them unless you walked into them.

I'm not saying that looking at CP should be illegal or anything, but Turkey, until they wanted so bad to get into the EU has done hardly anything in the way of law enforcement.

oooh boy, I'm Turkish and had posted>>44156as a sort of stupid joke, but well.

>There have been some kidnappings of, I think, Germans who were brought back to Turkey and Turkey has refused to deal with it.
wat. No such thing, they probably wouldn't have given a flying fuck if it was a Turkish citizen, but Germans getting napped is big trouble for them - the stuff is recent and search and rescue crap is going on anyways.

>I don't know if it still is in place but child porn is legal there and Istanbul has a problem with production of cp(or maybe not, there was supposed to be a big crackdown about 2 years ago).
No, it's illegal - however law enforcement over the internets sucks on Turkey, so you can get away with it. But, it is related to their incompetence and corruption - the laws are there. So, while you may freely look at cp and nothing may happen, while the next week you might make a communist speech in public and then the police can "find" CP in "your" computer.

>Also I lived in Germany for a bit and most of the Turks I met are scum.
Completely true, but drawing most conclusions from this observation is faulty since their retardation for the most part stems from their poverty and related lack of proper education.

>Also Greeks and Turks hate each other, more hate from the Greek side though.
Only the retarded portion of both populations do that.
>There are still Kurdish rebels, although it is very unlikely that you'd have much of a problem with them unless you walked into them.
True.
