Argentinafag here... I have a novel idea for you: Go to the Iguazu Falls.
The Iguazu Falls are fucking amazing, and are located right on the border between Argentina and Brazil. You can visit the falls from both countries, and see the national parks on each side of the border. Hotels there are quite cheap, and from there you can head either south to visit the rest of Argentina, or north to visit the rest of Brazil. (Maybe depending on whether you make Brazilian or Argentine friendships?)
The falls can be seen from both sides, from my experience the Argentine side brings you closer to the falls to the point that you actually get wet, while the Brazilian side has a better panoramic view, but not so much closeness.
Argentina is definately cheaper, btw. I went on vacations to Brazil last January, and everything costed much more than last year. This is because the Brazilian real has gained strenght against the dollar, while the Argentine peso has stayed the same.
In any case, both countries are fucking beautiful, and you'll have a great time. In Brazil I would stay the fuck away from Sao Paulo, though.
