I want to go to America. Damascurio
Britfag here, early this year I scraped together the money to go to Japan, it was awesome etc etc.

Now I want to go to the other side of the tracks and visit the U.S.A.

So, that's about as general a statement as saying I'd like to eat some food at some point in my day. So I'll throw it out to you guys, name a good American city. I'm thinking either New York or Chicago, L.A doesn't really appeal to me so don't mention it.

I know most of you are American, so you'll probably know good places to stay in a respective city, I'm open to suggestions and hoping to go in March for about 2 weeks.

Pic couldn't be less related.

dont come here.

Why not? I'm sure it's a horrible place to live, but I say that about most countries. It's good for a visit surely?

/trv/ suffers from bad troll syndrome. They don't even attempt to hide themselves.

But I can't help you. I'm an American and I've never been to either New York or Chicago. I usually travel outside the U.S.

Elaborate please.

I was open to suggestions for any destination in the U.S. I'd love to go see the great countryside around New England, but I don't know if there'd be enough there to engage me for a week.

Actually, it's sort of the opposite. At least, I can say that with confidence about California. It's a pretty damn nice place to live, but we don't exactly cater to tourists, unless you're really into theme parks. New York is about as touristy as it gets. Just go there, I guess. Expect a lot of buildings, a lot of cars, a lot of assholes, and some pretty good food.

i live near NYC, and it is a breath-taking sight, if you wanna do it up right, get a helicopter ride around the city. also, the restaurants in NYC are top notch, and they have awesome themed restaurants like Dr.Jekel and Mr.Hydes, Mars 2021, and Ninja.

look into the different things to do on the internets, but NYC has everything you could want to do... and it is the biggest city in the west....

>Ninja

Ha, I went to a Ninja in Japan. It was a very odd experience.

So it seems New York is a good place for tourists. Any good places to stay, cheap hotels etc? I'm hoping the strength of the pound against the dollar will help me out a bit here.

I think Chicago would be the best city, except for that you're going in March, and it's going to be fucking cold.

If you want to see beautiful countryside, forget New England, go to Montana, see Glacier Nat'l Park. It's god damn gorgeous.

Chicago is great, go there.

Isn't Chicago the city that Americans make fun of for being shitty and full of gangs?

Oh wait, I'm thinking of Detroit right?

You'll only encounter gangs in certain areas of the South Side. And I'm not sure why anyone would ever want to go there. As a Chicagofag, I recommend this city, but you'll have a good time if you go to either Chicago or New York.

And I think you're making a good choice not to go to LA. California is worth a visit but there are better cities there than LA.

There are two Chicagos. One is a great place to live, the other is the butt of all the jokes.

If you want to be stunned by how beautiful a city skyline and city center can be there is no better place for that in the world than Chicago (well, there is one, Hong Kong, according to an official ranking). All New York has got in this department is Times Square, which is a very narrow piece of real estate and is a tourist trap on top of it, and several landmark buildings here and there, but nothing like the combined effect of Chicago's huge amount of world-class architecture.

Depending on what you're looking for I'd say either New York or San Francisco. Both are great to visit but they are different as night and day.

In SF I kow a great hotel that's really cheap. In NY it's cheaper to stay on the Jersey side xp

I've been to Chicago multiple times, never been to New York. I want to go to New York, but Chicago is amazing. Favorite place to go vacation, ever.

Times Square is amusing at first, but the real pleasure of NYC is in the East Village, the West Village, SoHo, Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Astoria, and all the other little neighborhoods that really cement NYC as a place where people actually LIVE.

You'd be much better off having dinner at the Neptune Diner in Astoria than going to a theme restaurant by Times Square.

Never been to Chicago, but I hear it's lovely.

If I were you I wouldn't limit myself to just cities. Chicago is a good choice, since it's sort of a gateway to interesting things. I'd head west from Chicago if you go there and either go to the Southwest or the Northwest for the most of your trip, those are the most interesting places here. Even so, Chicago and New York are both great cities in themselves, although Chicago is a little more quaint and less touristy if that bothers you.

Go to Canada instead.

I think America is a hard place to travel about. Or at least enough to really get a sense of it. There's so much here. So many different groups of people and lifestyles.

I suppose like any place, the world outside of the city is far different from the city itself. But I would say if you get the chance, that Chicago would be a good place to go.

Seattle is also a great city. It's got that bigger city feel, but it's small. Nice weather too.

I live about an hour out from San Francisco. I haven't travelled much but I like the place.
>> Anonymous
Ok, so today I've woke up. And it seems that Chicago is a more classy place. But NY is more diverse? I could technically afford to spend a week in each. Good idea?
>> Anonymous
you are right about LA, it was the worst place i ever visited. SF comes in a close second. Monterey was fucking beautiful though.
>> Anonymous
I wouldn't go to NY.

It's just like London except infintely better, but still, nothing that you probably haven't seen before.

I would recommend Miami.

If you can afford two places you might consider SF and NY. If you want to experience America why not go for the two extremes?

live in new york once but leave before it makes you hard. live in northern california once but leave before it makes you soft.

both are great places to go but like another anon said if you want to experience the grandeur, the "larger than life" quality of america, chicago can't be beat and it will leave a lasting impression. it has the continent's tallest building for a reason.

btw that reason isn't 9/11 as some people think. the twin towers were shorter.

Just see the entire country. There are like 7 major regions/cultures (Northeast, Southeast, Floridian, Midwestern, Western, Californian, Pacific Northwest) and dozens of minority ones. Spend 2 days per city and come here for more like 3 weeks or a month. Because you speak english, you'll be fine, just stay out of bad neighborhoods. If you ask us ahead, you can get delicious and probably inexpensive food everywhere. The impression you'd get from any one city would be contrasted by so many others. At the same time, you can't go wrong anywhere.

Make sure you stop by Phoenix. The weather is amazing in March (as opposed to Chicago or NYC) when the desert starts to blossom and you can get filled up on all kinds of tequila and Mexican food.

You can get a tan and you will be well-received because you're British. Plus out here you don't have that rudeness and indifference that's rife in the East Coast and Midwestern cities.
