Hello all
I'm starting to plan my cycle journey which will take me from Slovenia to Japan. I'd like advices on possible routes.
Croatia->Hungary->Ukraine->Russia->Mongolia->China is the quickest option from what I was able to gather so far and it would take 4 to 5 months. I'm more inclined to go with a Central-Asian route like in the pic, Croatia->Monte Negro->Albania->Greece->Turkey->Georgia->Azerbaijan->various *stans->China which looks a lot more interesting. I'm afraid it would take a lot more time tho, especially considering lousy roads and all the visas I'd have to take care of..
In short, I'd need the best (time-wise) route to go from Slovenia to China, preferably through central Asia.
No Iran/Afghanistan/Pakistan please! =D
From China I'll probably go on to Korea and then Japan or directly to Japan from Shanghai, both via ferry.
Other advices pertaining to such a journey are also welcome.

Watch that documentary 'Long Way Round' with Ewan McGregor.

your route will inevitably take you through a lot of disputed border regions. Also China doesnt let all that many foreigners into their western provinces, so unless you have some good contacts you may find that you will get turned around at the border crossing into China even if you have the proper paperwork.

This trip won't happen for at least another year and half, I hope the Tibet tensions will go down somewhat by then. OTOH, I've read a blog of a guy who did a pretty similar thing, only the other way around, and he didn't have any problems on China border crossings (except long waits).

The only solution is genocide, and the Chinese government isn't as organized as you think, especially in the West.

You're gonna have to wait for at least 5 years after the genocide commences

Watch out in those "*stans", you should probably avoid those just as much as Afghanistan and Iran, if not more.

Well, other than Turkmenistan, I doubt I could have any serious problems there (without acting dumb that is). Even with Turkmenistan the only problem I expect is that anything other than a transit visa will be hard to get.
Remember, I'm from a former socialist country myself so I'll know what to take care of and what to keep away from.
