So I'm living in Beijing, China for a year. There was a pretty epic thread a while ago for people to ask questions and people living in China to post some funny stories. I'm starting it again.
As some of you may know China has a one child policy. This is creating all sorts of new social and behavioral patterns that the government and people are just now starting to notice and understand.
As I was talking to this Chinese guy I noticed yet another lady with a pampered little chihuahua with a really nice collar. I'd seen a ton of these middle aged ladies walking around and I'd always wondered what's up. I asked him about it so he explained to me that as the kids grow up and go to university or get their own family the parents are left with a really hardcore "empty nest" syndrome. This leads them to get dogs and treat them as almost a new son or daughter. Some dogs are extremely pampered with some receiving pedicures and and "fashion makeovers." Wikipedia "little emperor" for an interesting bit about the one-child policy.

Just as well, though. My Chinese friend says overpopulation is a very serious problem that is actually going to get worse, not only because the population is still growing but with consumption they're just going to kill the planet

You should ask your chinese friend how he feels about the fact that minorities in china can have as many kids as they want, and the percentage of ethnic han chinese in china has dropped to 90% from 99%.

Keep in mind their whole 'zhong hua min zu' bullshit. They want to pretend that they're all one people (just like America actually) but they heavily discriminate against the non-Han Chinese.

Population is expected to top out at 1.5 billion, and then begin to decline. Once the country develops economically, they won't even need the One Child Policy anymore, since wealth and low birth rate go hand in hand. For proof of this, just look at Hong Kong, which has the lowest birth rate in the world.

Overpopulation will be a much worse problem in India. They're at 1.1 billion already and have a much higher birth rate than China, with no population control policies.

I guess that's one advantage of China's authoritarian government; India couldn't do that if they wanted to, since it would be seen as infringing on peoples' freedom and shit.
