Moving to NYC almost completely broke. Anonymous
I only have 1000 dollars to my name. I don't know anyone in the city. I don't have any work experience, and I can't find work where I live now. I'm thinking about moving to NYC. I don't have a car to pay for, which should make things easier. Inspire me /trv/

wow... whatever happened to that show?

Fuck OP, I'm in exactly the same situation. Maybe we should hook up and drown our sorrows in booze. Don't give up man, you never know how things will turn out. Snag as many jobs as you can and work your ass off, because NY is not a cheap place to live. Don't be ashamed of relying on charity, if it comes to that. Everyone needs help sometimes. And hey, isn't this what AMERICA, FUCK YEAH is all about, pulling yourself up from nothing with good old determination and hard work?

you don't know anyone, you have no money, and you want to move to the most expensive city in the USA. Real fucking bright.

Here's a tip b/c I feel bad for you: go on the nyc page of craigslist, look at the random job listings and find one. Btw, you'll will not find a place in manhattan to live in unless you go into harlem. I would say brooklyn is a cheaper area to live. again, use craigslist and find a person looking for a roommate who will take you in.

Let me add some more. You really don't need a car if you're not going to travel out of the city much. Just find a used bike and you'll be fine. So that'll save you on gas, insurance, and maintenance. Once you find a job there, make sure you talk to people and network, don't be a recluse. that will help you out a lot if you need to look for another one.

how about getting some sort of transit card? Biking really isn't my thing.

NYC? Are you fucking retarded?

Fail, fail, fail.

1. Manhattan does not, as you seem to think, end at Harlem. Op may be able to find a place in northern Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, or Jersey City. Heading straight to Brooklyn and ignoring the rest of the metro area is a typical and stupid beginner's mistake.

2. Harlem is not affordable. Welcome to the 21st century.

3. Brooklyn is HUGE and there are poor shitty areas as well as places more expensive than many areas in Manhattan.

I would advise the op to seriously reconsider unless op is well versed in homelessness. You will need to front well over $1000 for any living situation, even a lot of shares, and you will need money to eat while you wait for your first paycheck. Even if you're lucky enough to land a job your first day here, with no experience, good luck surviving on $0 for a month while they figure out yout paperwork and eventually crank out a check. Oops, rent is due again. Oops, you're fucked.

Or, befriend someone who will let you sleep on their sofa for a month. It's how a lot of people get started here.

jesus christ at least get a loan from friends and family while waiting for your first paycheck. What the fuck have you done with your life to have NO work experience, NO money, NO friends, and NO job. I think I had 3 or 4 of those when I was underage.

Good fucking luck.

If High Pitch Erik can afford to live on Manhattan, OP should be able to pull it off too.

Maybe he actually lived his life instead of wasting it with wage work.

Don't be fooled. HPE swindles fans of the show and takes advantage of everybody. He would be just as fucked as the OP, if not worse, it weren't for his recognition from the show.

If you can’t afford New York (and I can say with confidence that you absolutely cannot), move to New Jersey. That’s what a few million others have done.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! OH MAN THAT'S A GOOD ONE! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

hahaha. oh man. hah. thanks for that. i hadn't had my hearty laugh at someone else's expense yet today.

okay, well, in all seriousness, the only way this situation could possibly end in anything but homelessness is if you find someone to live with for cheap/nothing for your first few months while you earn enough money to start renting an apartment. because no matter where you go in the city, you will have to pay a security deposit and one or two months rent up front. so unless you have someone here you could crash with, or can magically find someplace for under $500 (......AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!), be prepared to sleep in cardboard boxes under overpasses.

I dont know why youre thinking about moving to NYC. A crummy apartment is going to cost over $1-2K per month. My brother used to live in someones basement for $650 when he was attending college near la guardia.

Stay where you are, get more money and save, go to craigslist and find a roommate(s) in NYC or NJ.
