NORTH AMERICANS Anonymous
I hear people who've lived in European and Asian countries (particularly China) tell me that North Americans are a cold, unfriendly, and alienating people.

Could it be true?
>> Anonymous
>>62341
Yes.

I was born and raised in North America and after having lived in both Europe and Asia, I can confirm that this is true.
>> Anonymous
Like anywhere else you go in the world it all depends on the location
>> Anonymous
I live in Sweden and often hear from immigrants that we Scandinavians are seen as a cold, unfriendly and alienating people.
>> Anonymous
I live in south america and yes, it is true.
>> Anonymous
Pretty much everyone in the world hates americans, deal with it. We think your "AMERICA FUCK YEAH!!!111" mentality is retarded.
>> Anonymous
>>62401

That's because you are. I'm an immigrant living in Sweden, and you truly are a bunch of boring people. Not everybody of course, but alot of you are. It's like, you've lost the joy to live and just work for shit.

But I'm sure you're an awesome person, don't get me wrong.
>> Anonymous
>>62411

That's not an answer to the question. Learn to read, stupid.
>> Anonymous
I hope it's not true. Awhile back, I was in a unique position for three years where I met lots of people from all over the world. I've spent a whole lot of personal time making friends with internationals, and going out of my way to show them a great time while they visit the U.S. In my experience, the international visitors had a good time, even without my help.

Perhaps it's Canada and Mexico that are queering things up?
>> Anonymous
>>62422
No, I'm actually a pretty boring person who really doesn't care much for anything.
The stereotype fits pretty well.
>> Anonymous
>>62411
I'm a Canadian, shiteater. and>>62425is right, your answer is incompatible.

I'm asking because I went from a factory job, that employed mainly immigrants, to this dorm I'm staying in where most people have come from within the country and no one here can even make an effort to say "hello" in the hallways unless they're fucking smashed. Of course, it could also just be that they're teenagers.

Anyway, it's really jarring because my coworkers were all super friendly and fun to work with. I'm almost considering being a blue-collar worker if it means I'd be happier than with this awkward University bullshit.
>> Anonymous
Any place that doesnt have people like you will seem cold and unfriendly to you.

I am a brit who grew up in america. Americans are often overly friendly to the point of annoyance by compared to the brits.
>> Anonymous

Most people keep to themselves. It comes from the expansion days where you lived on a farm and it was just you. However, if you ever talk to someone, they will be more than happy to talk to you. Most would be interested in knowing more about you.

Immigrants in sweden are usually somalis and arabs, why the fuck would you care what they think about you?
>> Anonymous
>>62598
Not saying I care, I'm just saying what they're saying.
The same probably goes for any other country that is located in the north.
>> Anonymous
>>62605
All the swedes I've met are really nice. The nigger somalis and terrorist arabs are probably just upset that swedes view them as murdering rapists, a reputation that -looking at news/prison statistcs/etc- is entirely deserved.

Just look at Malmo, jesus fucking christ.
>> kris-alyx devereux
that's really not true especially here in richmond va these damned racist homphobe idiots hate everyone if you're not whit & straight they will probilly try to kill you. but there are good cities here like the 7 cities region in virginia roanoke also in virginia, the triad region in nc & ashville VERRY VERRY open towards us, also knoxville tenn area it's just great in the fall, & myrtle beach sc, because they've finally changed a decades old policy about us.
>> Anonymous
>>62401

I'm Norwegian. We're like this, because it works for us. Our evolution has a society has made us this way. I'd say it's worked out just fine. Look at the standard of our society and institutions, and compare it with these feisty arabs and somalis. Somalia isn't even a proper country, just a battlefield for these fun loving mongoloids, and arab countries have legal systems reminiscent of Europe before the renaissance. They still have hereditary heads of state for christs sake.

So I can live comfortably knowing that somalis and arabs view us as cold and alienating.

to OP: Don't listen to what you hear from people, just go and see for yourself ;)

Most of the time, immigrants in any country will say the populace is alienating because they themselves haven't mastered the language yet.

This is by far the most interesting part of this thread.

Anyway I've noticed that North Americans place are far more self-centred than us (Britfag) in terms of emoting opinions, looking down on people and being quite loud. I only have experience with American tourists, but it's pretty accurate. You guys can be quite intrusive. It's not a big deal, though, most of you are alright once you get used to the long silences in between sentences.
>> Anonymous
lol if you lived in germany you know what "cold, unfriendly, and alienating" really is... at least till you get to know someone better. In the US, i think it the further west you get the friendlier people get (with some exception in between). But compared to Europeans most Americans can be considered friendly.
>> Anonymous
I'm a Canadian who has spent a fair amount of time around Americans, and in America, and I can confidently say they are all complete faggots. The extroverted ones are the ones you actually don't want to hang around with anyways.

This kind of shit doesn't happen in Asia because most countries have tight immigration quotas. I don't know why whitey has so much trouble controlling immigration, can't you just say "no" when mexicans/arabs apply?

It is true. I mean you need people in stores to greet you and wish you a good day to feel better. Have you ever answered to one of these "Hi, welcome to wallmart, how are you?" dudes? I did when I was in Vegas and the guy looked at me like I was Osama Bin Laden. In fact you're a bunch of selfish and arrogant people. Not all of you, but most of you.
Okay we Germans and especially Bavarians, aren't the nicest people on the planet, but compared to you, we are 10times more friendly.

It's pretty much the opposite. North America is one of the friendliest, most hospitable places on Earth.

I've been to many countries in Europe and Asia. The UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Greece, Qatar, India, China, Japan, and South Korea. In many of these places, people were pretty damn rude. When I visited America I was treated like a family member.

I live in South Florida where a large percentage of the populace is either Cuban, Haitian, Brazilian or Mexican.

I would kill to see a foreigner from any country but these, I would roll out the red carpet, I even invited some random British gentlemen into my house and served him lunch just because he was something different.

It's not that a lot of us are "fake" friendly, it's just that we don't really see many foreigners, apart from those south of the border.

There are even now documentaries on tv presenting China as always having been a world power and that almost every aspect of modern life can be attributed to Chinese ingenuity. There was just a docu on Confucius the other day crediting his philosophy with the prosperity China enjoys today which doesn't exist.

I think it's the complete opposite. It's impossible for the news media to mention China without also using the phrase "human rights" immediately afterward. They present their military as some huge threat that may attack ANY SECOND NOW, and even when they do stories on their economic growth they always have to put some threatening spin on it "omg Chinese economy will soon crush us all if we don't do something!!".
>> Anonymous
>>63197

Plus they'll say stuff like "Chinese economy has been growing 10% every year ... BUT AT WHAT COST?" [Cut to shot of smokestacks, then a 10 year old in a sweatshop]

Then they'll bring up Falun Gong and Tibet for no reason [Cut to shot of threatening looking Chinese police officer]

>> ??????????
I haven't been to the US, but the feeling I get from Europeans is a lot of xenophobia. Scandinavians are very often cold and cliquey, both among immigrants and natives, Germans are a lot less so. Russians are either very welcoming or very cliquey, it seems, with few in-betweens. Brits seem a bit nicer. Southern Europeans are very accepting from my experience.

Arabs differ as much as Europeans. In Lebanon, everyone treats you like their 'bro', while in the Emirates, there's a lot of cockiness, arrogance and feigned courtesy.

Also, to Eurofags whining about Arabs -- there aren't that many of us in Europe. Turks, Pakis, Persians and nigras are not Arabs, and Moroccans only arguably so. Learn the difference, it could save your life.
Lebs and Pallies are stereotypically guido-lookalikes/metrosexuals, but rarely do they stir shit up like those damn Somalis.
>> ??????????
Also, sweeping generalisations etc.
>> Anonymous
A small percentage of Americans are very catering to tourists and immigrants. They understand there are cultural differences when dealing with a person from outside North America and won't judge people based on where they come from. Unfortunately, the majority of the population couldn't find Asia on a map, name even 3 capitol cities in Europe, and assume anyone without an American flag t-shirt on that has an accent is either and illegal Mexican immigrant or terrorist. You'll more than likely get stuck dealing with someone like that in the US, just remember we aren't ALL like that.

The way people act around you also depends heavily on your ethnicity. I'm Asian, and find that Americans in general have been nicer to me, but had nothing but shitty experiences growing up in Australia, ignored and shunned by racist fucktards all over the place, had almost no friends there except this one aboriginal kid. Not everyone is an asshole but...the truth is, it has become "cool" not to care. So young people grow up with this mentality.
In schools friends pass by each other without even making eye contact.
People don't wave.
When cars stop for people to cross the street, no one waves a thanks or even an acknowledgment.
This coupled with our current president makes most of the general population in America, complete dicks to anyone not from here.

I'm from Philly which is the heart of cold, unfriendly, and alienating people. But the funny thing is that it's mostly the foreigners that fill the city, (but the locals are some what to blame too.) When you put everybody from around the world into one place, and they have different cultural ways and values, and they secretly hate each other (Pakis vs. Indians, Cubans vs. Puerto Ricans vs. Mexicans vs. Guatemalans, Russians vs. Georgians, etc,) what do you think is going to happen? Cold, unfriendly, and alienating people, thats what.

Philly is just a microcosm of what is happening to most of America.

But foreigners get biased opinions after only living in one place in North America. I find southerns very friendly, specially Florida. Also Oregon, Idaho, Washington State, and the northwestern Canadian providences. I heard the same is true in Mexico, Tijuana has friendly people while Mexico city supposedly does not.

And then places change, New York City used to be the heart of unfriendliness, now it's like fucking clean and neat happy land.

American school system has a pretty nasty culture which makes kids hard coupled with all of the divorces and disfunctional families Americans might not be as friendly as some others like perhaps Jamaicans. Though Americans might be less likely to disguise or fake their feelings when they aren't on the job than Asians. Also Americans are livelier and noisier than Asians and Germanic Europeans.

People are people no matter where you go. A country is nothing more than a series of imaginary lines on a damn map. Where you go doesn't dictate an individual's personality, that person's outlook on their situation and social ethics do.

I'm thinking about expatriating to either Trondheim, Norway, or Gothenburg, Sweden. I'm also considering Oslo, but I'm anticipating getting sick of such a place.
