Traveling Alone Anonymous
Have you ever travelled ALONE to another country? For example, from europe to a random usa state or the other way around. I'm thinking of going on vacation alone, my friends are too shit to save up money for things like this. Some advice for traveling alone would be nice, or some stories. Like, did you bring cash, or creditcard. What were your mistakes? Did you bring your own food or did you eat at a restaurant every day. Things like that.

I travelled alone to Brazil but I had a nice family to stay at. I brought cash only for the time (3 weeks) and we ate at delicious restaurants every day or the food the family made for me. I ate like a king :D
Mistakes? I shouldn't have brought polo shirts, Brazil is hot man.

i've traveled to Germany completely alone. I dresses like a local and remembered key phrases.

Blended in good enough for people to ask me for directions. Not good enough to tell them directions in german, though.

I am alone in Japan right now. Works fine, it can get a bit ronery though, at least if you don't stay in hostels or somewhere where no other tourists stay all the time.

I brought credit card only, cash gets stolen and it's gone. Sucks. ATMs basically work everywhere in a normal country. How are you supposed to bring your own food?

I'm eating so and so. Course I'm in an apartment right now, so no hotel room or whatever and a kitchen too. So I'm at least eating breakfast at home, but when I'm out I eat some fast food stuff.

My basic mistake so far? Probably not establishing some sort of contact with people living here before I got here. I'd love to go out sometime drinking and stuff, but if you don't know anyone, it's kind of hard really.

Of course, if you're on a short term stay, means just 1-2 weeks and staying at a hostel or something like that you're more likely to meet people. Not locals, but at least someone you can probably hang out with.

stay in a hostel, thats the best place to meet people to talk, walk arround, fuck, etc. this is not only my opinion, but common sense. everyplace i went i met nice people in hostels. i wouldnt know how to meet new people without staying in hostels. i have no idea of how to do it lol, like going to a night club and saying "hi my name is anon i like coke wanna be my friend?"

Ok, so..
Hostel: meet people.
Hotel: avoid people.
Amirite?

rofl credit card in japan
rofl cash getting stolen in japan
u r a japan n00b, obviously.

I always travel alone. I've been to Beijing, Seoul and Hanoi alone. I live in Japan, and most my in-country travel is alone too (Tokyo, Osaka, etc, etc, etc) It's no problem.

This man is correct. In Japan you gotta have cash. Also, you gotta be a fucking idiot if you think someone is going to jack you. Japan is like the safest country evar. For a gaijin at least.

And so? You can actually use foreign credit cards almost everywhere now. You can also do cash withdrawal at the most common ATMs with your credit card. (In every fukken 7-Eleven for example)

So yea, when I need cash I get it from an ATM. No need to carry shitloads of cash with you.

Well, it was just a pain in the ass to go to the ATMs at the local bank or post office or whatever because they're open like 3 hours a day. Also, there's a fee with each withdrawal since you're using a random ATM from another country.

And a lot, if not most, places I fequented did not even take any sort of card. But then again, I was in Kansai most of the time, so maybe you can get away with it in Tokyo. I brought $1500 with me and had it in my dormroom the whole time and not once was I afraid anything was going to happen. I think I'd be more worried about leaving shit in my own house in the US than in some random dormroom in Japan.

I don't feel that save. And I certainly wouldn't carry around that much cash at any time.

Where I live there are two 7-Elevens you can reach in less than a minute. Both open 24h a day and both got ATMs from which you can get cash.

What are the Pro's and Cons of traveling alone
compared to let's say, traveling with 3 people?

Staying with the same people for a month or longer can get incredibly annoying, even if they're good friends of yours.

You can't just do what you want to do, you need to take other people's wishes into consideration and shit.

On the other hand, being alone for a long time can really suck too. especially (i would imagine) if you're in a country where you can't communicate with natives.

Also, if you're going somewhere with frequent muggings and shit then a group is better.

this. traveling people can get on you nerves real easy, even if they're your good friends. but it can get lonely without them.

one thing i noticed though when i traveled alone rather than by myself is that people are much more willing to talk with me if i'm by myself, presumably not because my friends are shitty humans, but because 1 person is a lot less of a hassle than 2 or 3. also, you are forced to meet people more by yourself which depending on your personality could be good or bad.
