I'd like to go to college in Italy. I'm a freshman at a reasonably good (top 40) college in the US with good but not stellar grades. After the end of my second semester, I plan on flying over, getting a low-level (possibly in the travel industry in something), working on my fluency, and eventually resuming studying IR at UNIBO. I've got (distant) friends in Bologna to share an apartment with, so that's not a worry.

How horrible a plan is this?

Second semester is a long ways off. While I planned on doing the same thing, many things can change between now and then. I would find a job and get some extra money for it personally. I suggest getting your 4 years done rather than just 2 if you plan on staying awhile. Thus, if everything else does not work out, you have your school done.

I'm already working 10 hours a week, and I'm kind of reluctant to take on more, since anything I earn over $1125 a semester comes directly out of my financial aid grants.

Money's actually a big motivator here. I'd be much happier continuing my studies in Italy for a few thousand euros a year than racking up $20k in debt a year studying in the US. Even with the year off and me not getting any credit for the classes I'm taking this year, I'd still be finished pretty soon, since the Italian equivalent of college only takes three years.

I'm not sure what I'd do if it doesn't work out, true.

I still suggest my last statement, a lot can happen between now and then. As long as you have your school done, then no matter what you do or if it does not work out over there, you do not have to finish school if you come back.

While I can not say the same, I really do not feel/want to finish school before I travel, it is different for everyone. Do what you think, fuck everything else, and do it :).
