So I have to get from Osaka to Tokyo. I have a standard JR railpass.

I've looked at the bullet trains, but I think the only trains that go on that route are the Nozomi trains, which you can't use a regular JR non-green pass on. Halp?

Take the catbus.

there are 2 other trains that take that same railway, they just make more stops. those will work just fine.

The railpass can be used with either the Hikari or Kodama. Make reservations on the Hikari first since the Kodama's will stop at every station (unless time isn't an issue).

Use this: http://grace.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi
The search engine has an option to exclude Nozomi trains.

Changing trains motherfucker, have you thought of it?

Shinkansen trains from Osaka (JR Wrst) DO cross into other regions (JR Central, East). And they're not necessarily all Nozomi trains either. Take a Hikari and get off at its terminal, then take the next Hikari (or Kodama if you're close enough to Tokyo).

i used the normal rail pass and got me tickets to a hikari class shinkansen to tokyo and it only stopped at like kyoto and nagoya. took around 2 hours or something.

Are you blind or something? I did this trip last year and it didn't even make me a second to figure out that Hikari trains is the answer. They're fast, second only to Nozomi, have great bento/snack carts, spacious and clean. Totally included in the JR pass.

In Oct. 2007, I took a Hikari from Nishi-Akashi (a little west of Osaka) to Tokyo and it only took me about 2 1/2 hours, with short stops at Shin-Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Yokohama, and then Tokyo station itself. Not too hard

If you can't tell which eastbound non-Nozomi train goes to Tokyo (ALMOST ALL OF THEM) you sir are fucking retarded.

I need to go from
Narita airport -> Grand Prince Hotel Chiyoda -> Akihabara electric city.

Anyone know what lines I need to take?

Also suggestions for neat places to visit for clothing?

Real hardcore people get a 18 kippu and take the local trains. Osaka to Tokyo in 10+ hours for 2200 yen, fuck yeah.

(I'm never ever ever ever doing this again btw, changing trains every hour is a soul-crushing experience)

Any links for good subway resources?
Other than the basic map that is floating around, I have that and it's alright, I guess.

research it... it's really not difficult.

but if you allow plenty of time when you land, you'll be able to work it out easily.

the lonely planet guide has a subway map which is decent but it's completely lacking if you try and work out what JR line matches up with what.

Just memorise the names of where you want to go and what stations you'll pass through and it's really quite easy.

the only daunting part is Tokyo Station when it's massively busy. The information desks have English versions of the JR map which will make it a million times easier for you to get around.

There's a tourist guide booth at Narita. Go there first to get maps of the various areas within central Tokyo. At the train station downstairs there are both JR and Keisei offices- you can get info and maps on the JR and subway station there, and buy tickets on the various airport trains into Tokyo and back again.

hyperdia does subways too.

or use your cellphone's traffic guide
oh wait, tourist, yeah, nevermind.

Here's a geographically-accurate map of all rail lines in Greater Tokyo. Of course, doesn't include stations, but just check Wikipedia or something if you need more detail.

K, I'm gonna take:
-JR Narita Express to Tokyo Station
-Shinjuku-bound Marunouchi subway line to Akasaka-Mitsuke.
Should only leave a 2 minute walk.
