I have heard that age restricted products in japan are really slack when it comes to asking foreigners for their id's cause im 19, i smoke, and i want to go bar hopping with friends. [from what i can find the age for both is 20 there... pic unelated]
>> buddhabraham
[sorry still relatively new]

what i meant to ask was is this true? or what are anon's thoughts?

Sorry, but I'm going to have to sage you because you are a weeaboo. If you are actually Japanese, please disregard this post and by all means bump your thread up again. But if you are in fact a weeaboo, please kill yourself. No country deserves to have someone like you around.
>> buddhabraham
no not really, im going there with my university's music department, and we have three free days in tokyo... im not going there just because. i may be a noob to the ways of 4chan, and a drunkard, but not a weeaboo...

the cigarette vending machines all need to scan your ID before it lets you buy any. If you can't get into any bars you could always buy some beer from a vending machine which don't require the ID scan.

The age restriction isn't the problem; I hate to burst your bubble but most hotels and bars aren't even going to let you inside if you are not Japanese. There are signs everywhere saying no foreigners allowed, or even specific nationalities like Portuguese.

It's like Jim Crow-era discrimination all over again.

You sure thats in Japan?

yup it happens in Japan but it is not widespread. I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you're gonna be in big cities. It's an unfortunate fact, but I imagine it'll phase out in the near future.

Foreigner living in Okinawa here-

Are you white?
If you are white, nobody will ask you for shit, ever. This is because if they want to ID you, they will have to talk to you in English- an idea which scares the shit out of 99% of the Japanese population. Even if they do ask you for anything, just pretend you don't understand them. They will give in.

I have never been asked for ID to buy anything for the whole time I've been living here.

>>77386
You have never been to Japan, have you.
You "I've read all of Debito's blogs and now I'm an expert on the Japanese psyche!" guys are even worse than narutofags.

Even if there is a sign preventing non-Japanese from entering (which might I add, in three years I have seen exactly one) 99% of the time they will let you in anyway as long as you can either speak Japanese or you are with somebody who can.

Debito is a shitstirring cunt who blows things out of proportion. These places are a very small minority.

>>77401
The filo flags mean that the place is full of Filipina sluts available for hire- Japanese businessmen fucking love them.

Don't really know what you're talking about do you

When i worked at my old company i was in and out of Japan all the time and never have I encountered an establishment that wouldn't let foreigners in, and this was in the 90s
I'm sure there's a few here and there but hell you'd be hard pressed to find one

The beer machines require IDs now I think. At least the ones around where I lived last spring were changed to have a scanner.

GO TO JAPAN.
Dick.

The newer ones do but if you're lucky you can find an older machine, they haven't gotten around to putting the scanner on them yet.
>> buddhabraham
what about these face scanner machines i've heard about? do they work well on foreigners as well? or how popular are they?

>they will have to talk to you in English- an idea which scares the shit out of 99% of the Japanese population

i wonder, why. is english especially hard for them? or, do they not want to speak cuz their english isn't ideal? i cannot understan why they take it so serious.
i heard it only here on 4chan though. i was in japan once long ago, i spoke english quite badly, but i talked with some locals in english and we could understand each other. i didn't see any special fear of english...

They learn English for minimum, 10 years. Except they never use it. It's just rote memorization. So your average Japanese knows way more about English grammar than a native speaker does- but they have never had any practice in using it. So they get nervous.
If you can speak Japanese, once they know that, they will never speak a word of English to you again.

They start learning in middle school, which means the minimum they study is three years, six years if they go to high school. 10 years would be what, people with a college degree?

On a related note, based on my experience even Japanese university students who are supposed to be English majors are struggling with the very basics. Which seems crazy for me. I'm a non-native speaker English major and we just dived straight into old poetry and shit -- it was just (correctly) assumed every would be able to keep up.

Yes, if you're clearly foreign, no one will ask you shit. I blatantly look 16-ish and bought alcohol over the counter and at a bar. And hell I'm Filipino...

I can confirm this: I've talked to many Japanese people who were at University and their English skills are very low. It's because of the terrible education system in Japan for English.
