Sup /trv/,

I'm looking to move to the American south (Currently live in new england, sick of cold weather and rude people). I want to move to a pretty big sized city like Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, etc. I've got relatives in Knoxville, TN but I didn't really like that city (too small in terms of population)
>> Anonymous
Austin.
Atlanta.
Annapolis.
Maybe Dover if you want to be near the ocean.

Not Dallas. Ever.
>> Anonymous
well, move to memphis. plenty of niggers, bad drivers, and a bigger city. seriously though, avoid the black cities as much as possible. maybe nashville though.

Look into Chattanooga. I was born there (don't live there now), so I'm a bit biased but I really think its one of the best cities in the south. Theres awesome public transit in the downtown area, reasonable cost of living, fairly liberal, beautiful and theres plenty to do. The people are also friendly and crime isn't a problem.

You might have trouble finding a job there, but thats the only problem with the city. Try going on vacation some time and I gaurantee you'll love it. If I could find a job there I'd move back in a heartbeat.

If you're considering Mississippi, stay the fuck away from Jackson. It's full of gangs and corrupt politicians. Hattiesburg is a pretty decent place to live, but it may be too small for you. The towns on the coast, Biloxi, Gulfport, etc, are all pretty much wiped out from Katrina, but there's plenty of entertainment in the way of casinos and beaches. Most of the larger cities in Mississippi are up north; the southern part of the state is mostly small rural towns.

New Englanders aren't rude, we just don't give a shit.

THE WINTERS ARE FREEZING, THE SUMMERS ARE A MILLION DEGREES. FUCK YOU AND ALL YOUR PROBLEMS.

Tallahassee is a great town, plenty of diversity, and TONS of hot college girls. Or guys, whatever. Tallahassee never gets balls-sweating hot, and is still nice enough to wear sandals 90% of the year.

Although, Tally is not big, but I enjoy it, as traffic is never terrible.

Atlanta's not too bad. Just stay the fuck away from Fulton County and you're golden.
>> Anonymous
Just a warning about the weather down here. It gets fucking hot. Actually, the heat isn't so bad; it's the humidity that'll get you.
>> Anonymous
If you don't mind it being too north, St. Louis is actually an awesome city.

OP here, thanks for the info, does anyone have any info on cities in the Carolinas?

Words of Advice: If your planning on moving to TN, DONT move to Chattanooga. Its ok to visit but not to live.

San Antonio is were i would go.
>> Anonymous
to hell with texas

Nashville.

Also, Hendersonville is probably the best suburb.
>> Anonymous
I'm from New England and I've been living in the south for 4 years now. There's only two cities in the south I strongly recommend to someone from the northeast:

Austin
New Orleans

I live in San Antonio.

Do not listen to this man. Its almost as bad as El Paso.

MARYLAND IS NOT THE SOUTH

it is the midatlantic region. draw a line directly through America's center, it will bisect Virginia, putting Maryland well into the North. It's a fucking blue state for Christ's sake.

Old coastal cities like Charleston and Savannah are really nice to visit, but not nice enough places to live.

I live in the suburbs of Memphis, and even those suck now do to blacks moving in. Stay away but do consider Nashville or somewhere in North Carolina or Virginia.

You're right about the jobs. Even though there's a university there businesses won't move into Chattanooga because the people aren't educated enough. What jobs there are are retail or a few plants that hire everyone through temp agencies at $7 an hour. Then they'll lay you off in three months so they don't have to hire you full time. Also, i don't know what area you lived in but Chattanooga has more crime than Atlanta.

>>46635
Truth. The entire Eastern/Southeastern part of Tennessee is national forest (I.E. deserted). If you want to actually be able to find work go to Nashville or Knoxville. At least there's some signs of life there. Avoid Memphis like the fucking plague though. Niggers in Africa don't act as bad as the ones in that shit hole.

Person living just outside of Atlanta here.

I moved from CA to here. If you're used to dry heat, be prepared for a shock, because the summers will kill you down here and definitely takes some getting used to. Though it normally doesn't get past 90 degrees (only on the extreme days does it get higher than that), the humidity is off the charts and feels like you're wading through water the whole day, the air is so thick.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT move to southern Atlanta. Ghettoville is personified in College Park, GA, or anywhere near or around the airport.

Also, the area around Norcross, GA is ghetto as hell. If you're looking for pricey, but nice, go for Dunwoody or Buckhead. They're still in the "Atlanta" area, but because it's pricier, they're nicer areas to live in.

Good luck!

>The towns on the coast, Biloxi, Gulfport, etc, are all pretty much wiped out from Katrina

I live here and reconstruction has gone really well, you can barely tell that Katrina happened anymore. Anyway Gulfport/Biloxi is probably too small for your tastes but I'd recommend New Orleans

San Antonio isn't too bad, and I say that as a native. Fuck all these people saying move to Austin; that city's got nothing but freaks and queers. Between the two, OP, your choices are Mexicans and homos.

Also, Never Dallas, EVER. Or Corpus Christi. Houston's a huge no.

Austin seems like a good choice after reading these recommendations, I'm sure I won't mind the "weird" people.

dude, I drove through from New Orleans to Mobile last year and all I saw were Waffle Houses. has it made some rapid improvement that I am not aware of?

Also, OP, you should consider New Orleans if you haven't already. it's not a typical southern city, that's for certain.
>> Anonymous
If you want heat, move to Phoenix, Arizona. A quick drive to LA (and the rest of California) and Vegas. It's a huge, growing city; not to mention the west coast is better than anything east of the Mississippi. Though, since you're from England I guess the reason you want to be over there is because it's quicker to go back home.
>> Anonymous
I can't speak for what you're about but I wouldn't suggest that. Canada is far, far better in my experience.
>> Anonymous
>>46906
Crime just doesn't mean killing someone. The feds have to go into Chattanooga (and especially the surrounding towns) to arrest corrupt politicians and businesses breaking the law so much they might as well build a local FBI office there. Those rednecks get a little taste of power or a business other than a dollar tree and they get corrupt as fuck.

When I lived in Memphis it was the fourth most violent city in the United States, number one in rape, sexual assault, car theft and syphilis. However, the food and music are outstanding. If you plan to have a social life and don't like black people, forget it though.

I lived in Knoxville for a while. It's just a college town, even though the college in question has 26,000 students. If the college disappeared, Knoxville would too. If U of M, Christian Brothers, Rhodes, etc., disappeared from Memphis, many people wouldn't notice.

Chattanooga is like going to just the poor sections of Memphis without any of the redeeming cultural attractions. Nashville is kind of the opposite, as long as you like rock and country instead of jazz and rap. Anyway, if you go much farther south, es tiempo as estudiar espanol or something like that. Much farther north, you're not in the South any more, so why bother?
>> Anonymous
>>47775
>Anyway, if you go much farther south, es tiempo as estudiar espanol or something like that.

Isn't that the truth. You can cross the border from Tennessee into Georgia and it's like walking into Mexico. North Georgia is officially beaner central now.

Atlanta will probably be your best bet. Just stay away from the trashy/ghetto/black parts, and you'll be fine. There are a number of colleges and universities so the place isn't totally void of intelligent life.

I live in Cary, NC.

It's a nice suburban area, but close enough to Raleigh that you don't miss out on the typical urban shit.

Ranked in the top 20 safest large cities in the US, and number 1 in the southeast.

As for population:
127,640 (January 2008)
6.59 percent increase since January 2007
4.15 percent annual population growth rate (January 01, 2003 to January 01, 2008)

Median age - 33.7 years (2000 Census)

Cary is kind of a melting pot, in a sense. Too many different types of people to name.

If you're interested, look into it a bit more. It's nice here, warm weather most of year, not too far from the beach or the mountains, etc.

Samefag here.

Also, there's a ton of jobs here. Especially if you're interested in IT (you're on 4chan, I figured everyone here aspires to die in front of a computer). NetApp is one of the top companies to work for, and it's easy to move up in the company.

Move to Virginia. I'm live near the coast / beach area, but you should move to the Ridge and Valley or Appalachian Plateau area. Nice seasonal weather (except for summer when it gets very very hot), nice views and lots of trees.
>> Anonymous
W.Va. is sort of trickey to place anywhere. The northern part is more rust-belty and culturally similiar to PA and Pittsburgh. The east feels more like Maryland. The mountain regions hardley have anybody. The further south you go, the more like "the south" it feels especially in the coal field areas.

W.Va. has next to no black people or anything except white people. I think it's the least racially diverse state. I'm from the Northern part of the state, and I identify more with the mid-atlantic title than calling the state southern. Of course, somebody from Boone county may think the state is southern.

Better hope he has a lot of money. Unless you come from a loaded family you really can't afford to live in the white parts of Atlanta.

>Florida is almost more of the south than Virginia. So many rednecks.

Depends on where in Florida you're talking about. If you live in then middle/interior of Florida it's rednecks and trailer parks. Live on the coast and it's retired jews and over priced every thing. Go down to south Florida and better hope you speak and read and write Spanish.

Don't move to Jacksonville FL. The place is spread out as fuck and half of the town looks like it's poor as fuck. Hell, in downtown you can go from skyscrapers to barred windows in under 5 blocks so nowhere is safe.

Luckily they don't speak very much like hicks though, so you can get by with being around non-accented people most of the time.

There's still fucking religion ads everywhere though.

God I want to move back to Indiana, this place sucks ass.
>> Anonymous
Maryland is NOT the South. Trust me, Maryland is TOTALLY different from the South.

I really wouldnt consider Florida part of "The South" just because there's so many retired old people from the North.

Move to San Antonio. North side. South side is shit. There should be plenty to do, and you can always venture closer to downtown if you need more. It's a clean city (there isn't a single factory that puts anything into the air), the food is fuckwin and the people are pretty cool.

The drivers there suck, though. It's a city with far too many yield signs and no one that knows what they mean. But other than that (and the heat) it's awesome.

Hey /trv/, I'm going around to Austin for two days to pick up something, and this seemed like the right thread. Anything to do there that's not blatantly touristy?
