Hey there /trv/.By around august, I would like to relocate, along with a friend of mine, to san francisco, but i'm not too sure about a few things. I think most of these apply to just moving in general rather than moving to SF, but i'm sure SF complicates things because of real estate shortage, population etc.1. we're both fairly young, but we both have a pretty substantial amount of money saved, at least enough for six months of relatively spartan living, so that's not the issue. I'm aware city living is expensive, as i grew up in the NYC area. i'm banking on SF being significantly more expensive though.2. We're pretty much going there sight unseen, because we don't really know how else to do it. We'd ideally like to get jobs and get an apartment for a year lease, but, well, I've never done anything like this before. how do you get a job if you have no permenant residence, but to have a permenant residence, you need a job/income? it's a catch-22, and I imagine there's a way around it, but I don't honestly know it. Hostel living maybe? help on this would be good.subletting is also a possibility, but I find that finding a sublet of an apartment, and not just a room, is hard as hell to find and even harder to get. I guess, any information from somebody who's moved somewhere like this would help.
Get there.Stay in hostel.Immediately arrange to check out sub-lets, and or month by month rentals on Craigslist.orgStay in hostel for as long as it takes (2 weeks max I would imagine) all the while looking for a job. Hang out and do tourist things/explore the city for areas you want to live in during your free time between job interviews and looking at apartments.
>>44099awesome, thanks. do you know if hostel owners are used to this? I would imagine they are but I dont know, i've never really stayed in a hostel for that purpose.
Oh, also, what do you do when applying for a job if it needs an address/place to recieve mail? should I get a PO box? or can it be handled where you're staying?
Why did you choose SF? Just kinda curious since I live here and can't wait to get the flying fuck outta here.
>>44134combination of reasons, I want a foothold on the west coast, my friend is from LA and spent most of his life there and wants out, and I have a few family members in the bay area.what don't you like about it? I'm open to information regarding SF being terrible.
>>44117not him, but i'd recommend you finding a place to store your shit as well... i'd search for hostels online for a nice place. most have ratings/user comments.
>>44146the hostel in the presidio is the ONLY choice for the smart /trv/eller.
Sage. I intend to move to the Bay Area (Phoenixfag here) come next year.
Check craigslist for lots jobs, places to live, etc... Craigslist is huge in the Bay Area, as is Yelp, so I would use those tools besides word of mouth to understand The Bay.
