I'm thinking of leaving the US for some other country, talk me out of it

Japan - I can speak Japanese fairly well
Australia - Because, I don't know, seems out of the way enough.
New Zealand - Same.
South Africa - I hear it's easy to start a business here.
>> Anonymous
Japan - no one wants you there.
Aus - too long to get to and out of.
NZ - same as aus but even worse, retarded laws.
South Africa - Only good for a vacation.

>Japan - no one wants you there.
Sucks because my Associates in japanese will go to waste.

>Aus - too long to get to and out of.
Don't mind the deadly animals, internet censorship or heat that much. Travel time? Meh, I've never ridden an airplane before, the first time should be a doozy

>NZ - same as aus but even worse, retarded laws.
Please explain the retarded laws.

>South Africa - Only good for a vacation.
Fair enough, I hear AIDS is a real problem, so no sex if I touch down there.

Japan, although you're basically limited to a job as an English teacher unless you're JLPT 1. You probably don't want to limit your career to just English teaching so Japan is probably out, even though it's a fun place to live/mess around for awhile.
The other 3 sound good for job opportunities and language won't be an issue.

Thing is when I went to junior college(yeah, lol fail) I was planning on a career as an English teacher in Japan, then I realized that most Japanese people I know are douchebags. Horror stories on this very site also started to change my mind. With there being no opportunities for me, I think it's best for me to leave.

>>73311
You can make a good life for yourself in Japan as an English teacher if you make an effort to do so. That being said, the question is whether you _want_ to be an English teacher for years until you can get good enough in Japanese to branch out (but will probably be limited to translation, not a bad job imho).

I still have that highschool dream(I'm 24 now) of translating Manga/Anime/Videogames and shit, I know that might never come to pass, but if I can make an honest living in Japan being a teacher, I'd jump at the chance. I don't have a Bachelor's yet, but anyone have experience with that? Does it open any doors?

"Does anyone have experience with the JET programme"?

Nope, have fun. And good on you for jumping off that sinking ship.

Why leave? Staying would absolutely be the easiest and most convenient way of doing things, especially if you want to translate manga or anime.
>> Anonymous
Well, you're not immigrating to Japan, as their borders aren't open. We get more new immigrants in a day than Japan does in a whole year. Best bet for going there would be teaching English temporarily for a fling. This thread could help you too as your situations seem similar:

last time i checked this was 4chan. "come to australia" is a perfectly valid point, although perhaps lacking in much depth.

I can't take the moral decay and the rise of arrogant hipster culture anymore. I'll go crazy if I have to stomach another boarish, manipulative whore or a sarcastic, macho douchebag. I'm sick of the way Americans treat me and I want to get out before it's too late.
>> Anonymous
>>73389
Protip: humans in general are assholes. Don't expect any better treatment in Australia or New Zealand. And uh, expect to be the target of passive racism in Japan or violent crime in South Africa.
>> Anonymous
>>73389
Oh, and if you're using "moral decay" in the "Christian sense", expect to see a hell of a lot more of it in these countries. America is much more conservative and adheres to traditional Christian morality much more so than the rest of the developed world.

south africa: high rates of crime, carjacking, rape, murder. Massive unemployement, though the majority of the unemployed are black.

Japan: getting permant residence will be very difficult, huge cost of living so you will want some money saved or be able to get a decent job there.

New Zealand: dont really know much about the place, but everyone there seems to be leaving to go to australia, I think work is pretty low paying there, but standard of living is still quite good

Australia: Multicultural in most of the big cities, jobs are reasonably easy to find. Cost of buying a house near to the city is huge and rentals are on a steady increase. Infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the population increase in many areas.

Well, as long as I can escape the arrogant attitudes I'm encountering here in the states, I don't care. All I want to do is make an honest living, no one here seems to want to let me do that.

Were you offended by the phrase "out of the way"? I'm sorry. I meant it's far enough away from America for me to get the stench off of me. I meant no disrespect.

Not OP, but why is getting perm residence in Japan difficult? I've read blogs and the like where Americans and the like have gotten citizenship, they made it sound like a pain, but it didn't sound any difficult then any other place in the world. Not trying to dispute your claim, I'm just curious as I don't know any different.

5 years of steady employment and you have to renounce citizenship to your home country.

>South Africa - I hear it's easy to start a business here.
Yeah if you're black, and even then the economy is going to shit as a direct consequence of putting uneducated stupid blacks in charge and kicking out whitey.

>South Africa - Only good for a vacation.
Enjoy getting murdered and raped.

If Australia/New Zealand/South Africa are so nice, why the fuck are all their citizens living in London?
>> Anonymous

This. There really is no benefit to having permanent residence status nor citizenship in Japan, unless you're looking to break all ties with your homeland(s).

Op here

First of all I'd like to thank everyone who posted in this thread with advice.

>Yeah if you're black, and even then the economy is going to shit as a direct consequence of putting uneducated stupid blacks in charge and kicking out whitey.

Yeah, I'm black, I have an associates degree and am working on a bachelors. If what you're saying is true, none of that will matter anyway.

How are nigras treated in Australia and New Zealand?

Currently living in Japan on the Jet Programme as an ALT. Just going on to my second year, and it's a pretty nice set up. I got pretty lucky with my placement and other foreigners being right down the train line from me. Monthly salary more than covers cost of living, travel, etc.

My Japanese is passable (was my focus in college), but I'm no where near ready for the JLPT 1 or taking a shot at a CIR position. That said, I've learned a hell of a lot just from being over here one year, and I haven't even hit the books that hard. The JET can be a very, very sweet deal IF a lot of factors go your way.

That said, I'm white, and I have had a few other friends (one in particular was black and knew even more Japanese language and culture than me while also majoring in Japanese at my college) and within a year he got fed up with the racism/passive aggressiveness, finished out his remaining contract, and then went back to college, as he now needed a new degree.

My two cents. Give it a shot, and hope you have fun. If nothing else, it can be a nice breather after college
>> Anonymous
Thank goodness, someone participating in JET.

Tell me, just how competitive is the JET program? I'm 24 now, I'll be done with my bachelors by 2010 or 2011.

I'm aware of how Japan treats it's foreigners, I remember seeing a youtube video of a police sanctioned hazing of a Korean land owner. It was horrible.

They might be violently racist xenophobes, but it can't be worse than America's culture is now, can it?

Depends heavily on your consulate/embassy's location. My nearest one was in Detroit, and we had probably a thousand or more applicants trying to get to the interview phase (note, this covered much of the northern/midwest region of states, not just the city). I've also heard horror stories about Toronto's 4,000+ applicants.

In the meanwhile, try and build up reasons for WHY you should be a candidate they would select. Knowledge of Japanese language and culture isn't a requisite, but it certainly doesn't hurt. These people (employers) are looking for people who are willing to fulfill their yearly contract (employees), not flake out after the first month because they'd heard Japan was a cool place, but they really had no idea what they were getting into. Spend some time in Japan on a study abroad course. Learn some of the language and culture. Start working on how you're going to sell yourself, now. No rush, obviously, but certainly doesn't hurt to start early.

>>73504

It's...different. Not worse, but for some, not better either. Japanese people really do tend to look at the world as Japanese and non-japanese. Even if you can speak the language flawlessly, chances are, you will never be treated in the same manner as if you were born Japanese.

That said, Japan has a... unique fascination with all things foreign (being white and American is like having pocket aces). While they likely won't treat you the same as they would a fellow Japanese, many/practically everyone will go out of their way to treat you better and think of you as "well, s/he's foreign. Of course they don't know our rules. I'll help." And they will do this forever, not just while they get to know you. Some people look at it as a perk, others look at it as being looked down upon.

This. You can't expect to take off and have everything you don't have here; you're going to take your problems with you. If things aren't working, you have to change them. You're setting yourself up to be greatly let down, as every place in the world has myriad problems, most places many more than those that exist in your country.

>Yeah, I'm black
I was about to raze you for being another weak white boy who can't cut it now that being white isn't the ez-mode path to success, then I read this and looking back, what you said makes some sense.
Now I will raze you for being a weak black dude. Seriously, America may be tough, but blacks have it better here than in most countries period, for the fucked up logic that is.
Keep in mind that the world's opinion of black people, men in particular, consists entirely of either colonial experiences or the advent of hip-hop culture.
Now scream. And read Gaijin Smash. Google it right now. And laugh. And cry.
