Going to Beijing for 2 weeks soon. What should I do there? Where to shop? and what are the local people like to New Zealander's?

Beijing is a huge city, they're used to expats and foreigners, and they won't treat you any differently than anyone else unless you're huge and have blonde hair / blue eyes.

If you're going for the Olympics, prepared to see little to none of the Chinese culture. It'll basically be a huge western cluster fuck. If you want a taste of China go to the suburbs, or go to the country side.

Things to do in Beijing - don't know, haven't been there yet. I'm in Shanghai. Obvious things include trying Peking duck, the Great Wall and the Forbidden City.

just got back from beijing.. lived there for a month... loved it.

be leery in the wangfujing shopping area (its in the centre of the city) when anyone comes up to u trying to practice their english over tea... they're trying to scam you.
go to:
forbidden city
temple of heaven
great wall
san li tun bar street (but go to the part just west of the main street.. actually just go to china doll... look it up)
cabby's cant speak english but if u use a guidebook to point to the chinese characters of where u want to go they will drive u... never had a problem with them scamming me and they're really cheap.. 45 min. taxi to the airport costs like $14.
and yes get peking duck. go to quan ju de. mao used to eat there.
try the street food too... lamb sticks mmm

Thanks for that, does wangfujing have cheap fake stuff to buy in it? I looked at some pics of it and it looks like it sells legitimate stuff.

wang fu jing is all official stuff but the area around it is worth checking out for the night market (lots of weird shit to eat like scorpions)

if u want nice knock off stuff further east on chang an jie (guo mao station) is the silk market... u have to bargon really hard there but u can get some really nice thigns if u know what your doing.. lots of old white tourists can kind of ruin the deals tho... there's a place close to the zoo that everyone calls 'the zoo' that is the best.. its not in the lonely planet but some chinese girl took me there... ull have to look for it maybe u can ask somebody when u get there.

as a follow new zealander who use to live in china (not in beijing, but did visit here a few times), they love New Zealand.
They might call you American at first (mei guo ren) but you correct them (xin xi lan, New Zealand) and they will normally tell you how they think nz is beautiful and will be more friendly towards you.

But in Beijing, they are use to having like a bajillion tourists there. so they dont really care about foreigners that much like other cities.
