modern architecture in Prague Anonymous
Dear /trv/,

I'm going to Prague in the summer, with friends who are history majors. Of course these friends will want to look at all the old shit in Prague, which is great and all, but since I'm an architecture major, I want to have a modern architecture day!

So I was wondering if any of you knew of any good modern architecture in Prague.

Pic related.

If eyesore is another word for "awesome", then yes.

there's no modern architecture in Prague. That place is stuck in the 1980s. Went there last August

Modern architecture can be pre-1980. Picture related.

This looks so terrible on that land. Too unnatural, but there isn't enough of it to contrast well enough with the trees and grass.

Modern architecture is one of the few reasons I hate my country, everywhere I go this gaudy pretentious shit is shoved in my face. Seriously, most modern architecture makes Baroque look modest.

fuck yeah, weird buildings

what do you do as an architecture major?
>> Anonymous

There are tons of architecture firms and such like that. Of course competition is fierce and you don't particularly get to earn a lot unless you're at the top. As for specifics, I really have no idea. I suppose you do product design for commercial purposes. Things don't design themselves.

Why would you do product design? That's for industrial design majors. Architecture majors design buidlings. But that includes urban design, constructional design, functional design, etc. etc. So you could become one of those people who do calculations as to whether the building will actually stand. Or you could become a CAD monkey. Or whatever, really.

I think most architecture majors deal with buildings, although a lot of famous architects have designed products, like the Rietveld chair. I heard Frank Gehry say he did a teapot once, but nobody bought it.

modern architecture started in the 20s and lasted through the 80s. this is contemporary.

*sigh*

depending on where you practice architecture usually determines what kind of business you do in architecture (in NY, alot of refurb/gutting & refitting), in addition to what type of grouping your firm falls under (einstein, efficiency expert, etc.).

additionally, the modern architecture movement started sometime in the 60s or 70s, iirc. and gehry designs all sorts of crap because he is really far better at publicity than anything else. really, if you watch the documentary about him directed by pollock, you'd notice his design aides do the majority of the real design work. alot of architects do design work not solely related to buildings. some even go so far as to design furniture and patterns for carpeting/wallpaper.

and from one architecture major student to another, the pay sucks. the lowest paying of the three main licensed professions (doctor, lawyer, architect).

i just went to prauge last week

all the modern architecture is overshadowed by the old buildings

but the building in op's pic was pretty cool

(OP here)

Yeah but you do get to say you're an architect and be all smug about it. Who cares if the pay sucks if you're doing what you like?

Anyway, I used the word modern to differentiate between the old and new stuff. I didn't literally mean modernist architecture or whatever.

So I guess the building in my picture is the only one from the 20th century in Prague.

LOL no... how can you pretend to know anything about architecture when you clearly don't know the basics.

It actually started in 1913 with the completion of Walter Gropius' Fagus Factory.

Art Deco and Bauhaus are considered modern, and they are far from eyesores. They're my favorite architectural styles in fact.
