Vietnam Anonymous
Hey /trv/,

Has anyone ever been to Vietnam? I'm thinking about going there because apparently they have a growing tourist acceptance and the majority of the residents are young people like myself. Are there good places around Hanoi or other cities that would welcome Americans? Is the night life pretty active because of all the young people? I'd definitely like to go to a place where the world wasn't overtaken by senile, stubborn baby boomers and was wondering what it would be like to be in Vietnam.

Have you seen both of Anthony Bourdain's
Vietnam episodes? Looks interesting..

Anthony Bourdain is a baller. His show "No Reservations" is a top-notch, well written travel show. I watched his episodes on Japan after I went there and besides his horrible pronunciation of Japanese, it was all accurate and much easier to digest then any guidebook.

I was googling to prove you wrong but lo and behold: The US is an AIDS ridden shithole! What gives, America? Is it your niggers? The gays? And what the shit is going on with Switzerland?
(Sauce is wikipedia, you can tell because they spelled "prevalence" with two "a")

This.
Stay in the Hanoi Elegance 2 on Ma May St, right across from the hippie vegetarian restaurant/handspan tours. It's a good location for everything you'll want to do in Hanoi. I find Vietnamese people to be exceptionally rude and dodgy though, outside of ones actively engaged in the tourism industry.

Better than WWOOFing. At least, there are a lot more options available other than just farm work. When you do hit up Seattle/Washington you shouldn't avoid eastern Wa entirely. It may be a lot of desert, but there are some truly stunning geophysical landmarks. Ihighly suggest checking out Dry Falls. You acn't appreciate it until you're there...

In central Washington, on the opposite side of the Upper Grand Coulee from the Columbia River, and at the head of the Lower Grand Coulee, resides a three and a half mile crescent-shaped precipice known as Dry Falls. Ten times the size of Niagara, Dry Falls is thought to be the greatest known waterfall that ever existed. Geologists speculate that during the last ice age catastorphic flooding channeled watre at 65 miles per hour through the Upper Grand Coulee and over this 400-foot (120 m) rock face. At this time, it is estimated that the flow of the falls was ten times the current flow of all the rivers in the world combined.

When you ARE in western Washington, make sure to travel up and down the Puget Sonud. Do some Ferry hopping around the San uJan Islnads (I know at least one place through help exchange on Lopez Ilsand that you could stay) to really take in the beauty of the region. Someone mentioned the North Cascade park, which is also another great eaxmple of the area.

/trv/, hypothetical situation here: Someone who has neverl ived in a city before is moving to one and wants your help in picking it.

It can be any city in nay country. Your reasons for picking ti can be anything. The only things to consider are getting aronud and cost of living.
Getting aroundi s primarily about speaking foreign languages and learning teh native language. Knowing English, French and German I'll have ane asier time living in Leipzig than Doha than Seoul.

So /trv/, in which city should I live?

And remember, again, this is hypothetical (For now). Consider it preplanning.

I went to Vietnam last spring and had a great time. I stayed mostly in the south, so I can't really vouch for Hanoi. It seems like a quieter, more scenic area, although I'm sure there's a nightlife. Hoi chi minh, or Saigon as it was called in the past, has a great nightlife and is a very robust city. You can be taken for a ride though, so be careful. I'd avoid all the touristy crap and head to a town like Nha Trang and brave the local street markets and street food. Reject anything with any kind of English or touristy flavor. Go where the locals go and you'll meet the friendliest and most amazing people. And the food is amazing. Seriously, the best I've had in my whole life. Better than Italy!

Overall Americans are welcome, but a lot of English speakers and people hanging around tourist spots are just out for your cash. Be tough, don't get discouraged, and discover the fantastic things Vietnam has to offer. I can't wait to go back!

Nice, thanks anon. Surprised to hear that the Vietnamese are dodgy, but actually it makes a lot of sense.

Wow, I didn't know that Ho Chi Minh city was accepting. For some reason I assumed that North Vietnam was a more friendly place to travel.

People want to fleece you so they will be friendly to you everywhere in the country. Or if you go off the beaten path it seems like most Vietnamese are genuinely friendly and open people.
