Britfag here.

Travelodge is great here because they're not just placed in capitals and large cities. Are there similar companies in other countries? I've done some research and haven' found anything, but as we know none of a country's actual population lives in the capital.

This is not true everywhere. In eastern Europe the capitals are where most of the actual populations live. This is because city life there is not yet impossibly expensive and the cities are not yet completely overrun by tourists as is the case in western Europe. In Hungary for instance, a country of 10 million, 2.5 million live in the capital, Budapest. That's 25% of the total population. Russia, as we all know, is really just Moscow and St. Petersburg, and Moscow is the biggest metropolitan area in all of Europe. The story is the same in the rest of the region. There people actually LIVE in the cities. What a novel idea!
