Wow, /trv/ is slipping in quality. Maybe it's a product of all that flooding.
Anyway, Croatia is pretty nifty like most of former Yugoslavia and the Balkans. It's quite touristy though, if that makes a difference. I'll spare you a list of things to see there though (since they are everywhere). Crossing over into the other surrounding countries is easy and lax though. There is a border somewhere between Croatia and Bosnia which is on a bridge and consists of people riding on bikes holding up passports while they fly by too fast to see. Suffice to say, nobody makes a big deal about it. If you're there for a sufficiently long time, I suggest adventuring a bit to some Bosnian mountains and Belgrade in Serbia if you have time. Montenegro is also an option; the beaches there are probably less crowded (but by no means not crowded).
If crowding really bothers you, you can give a shot at finding an empty beach and camping there instead. I did this in Greece some time ago, except it was illegal and I was chased by police up hills. It was fun though and nothing came of it, so I suggest doing it anyway.
Basically, Croatia/Montenegro have great seasides, but a lot of the stuff is in neighboring places if you want to see some nature and stuff. Well worth visiting, and there is plenty more than just beaches, mind you.
