Do you have to learn French to live in Canada. I'd love to go live there but I dread having to learn a new language. Just tell me I'm a stupid lazy 'mericun who has only enough brain capacity for one language and I'll stay out.
>> Anonymous
No, they understand English perfectly well.
>> Anonymous
No, I know but conversely, since the Quebecois all know English shouldn't all the English-speaking residents technically also know French? I don't mean this as something that is compulsory but rather something that would be "expected".

If he could wrap his mind around such nonstandard and unapproved French words as "Bienvenue." (Literally, French for the English "Welcome.")
>> Anonymous
What do they say there for "welcome" then?

>>18032
I heard they also don't use "sacre bleu". Like, at all. They won't even know what it means when you say it to them. Some French guy told me this. He could have been lying. You know how those dastardly French are. Always tripping up us Anglophonefags for the lulz.

>What do they say there for "welcome" then?
In France? Some idiomatic French phrase, I would expect. Something that would translate to "I greet you." All I know is that the Académie française hates words like "Bienvenue" that are obviously English in inspiration.

>>18038
>I heard they also don't use "sacre bleu".
I've heard that in most English speaking countries "Gadzooks!" and "Blue blazes!" have also fallen out of everyday use.

Canadafag reporting. A few things about French in Canada....

1) Outside of Quebec, hardly anyone speaks French in Canada. Aside from a couple of places in New Brunswick and Ontario, all the French speakers live in Quebec. Yes, everyone in Canada has to take French for a number of years in school (9 years in Ontario), but because it is taught in a hugely inept manner all anyone can do is ask where the bathroom is.

2) The French the Quebecois speak is really closer to its own unique language instead of a dialect of French. For example, when a movie made in Quebec is shown in France, it has to be subtitled otherwise the French would not be able to understand most of what's being said. Furthermore, Quebecois accents are very difficult to understand.

tl;dr if you're coming to Canada, don't bother learning French, you won't need it.

wtf, 9 years in ontario? is this new since they got rid of grade 13?
I only had to take 6 years (grade 4-9), but took until grade 11. Still incompetent at the language. :}

Also, don't say "aboot", "eh", "agayn" or other Canadian dialect words in BC. They get highly offended by that.

This guy speaks the truth. Nobody outside Quebec speaks French except for government workers in Ottawa, who all speak English too.

In Canada the anglos are taught Parisian French in schools, which makes them completely unable to understand Quebeckers and their fucked up accents. Most people from France can't understand Quebeckers.

tl;dr: fuck quebec

Québec reporting. If you don't want to learn french, it's easy. Just don't move in Québec. Move in Ontario for being the closest to the U.S.A, move in British Columbia for the great weather and if you are a weeaboo, move in the maritime provinces if you like fish, move in center Canada if you want to get bored, or move in Alberta for some great business and employment opportunities.

Of course you will learn in time to say some things differently depending the region you chose to live in, but it's not a different language. Consider it would be the same if you would move to a different state within the U.S.A.
Still, come visit us in Montréal this summer. We got a lot of festivals, the chicks are smoking hot and the beer is good! Also, most non-retarded french-speaking Québéquois can speak english from very little to perfect. http://www.destinationcentreville.com/welcome.html

"Sacre bleu?!" I only see you fags say it. Only the old old old french from France would say it. They'll mostly say "Putain" (whore) or "Bordel" (whorehouse). I don't know what's the big deal with french and prostitution... In Canada and mostly Québec, the swear words are Catholic religion-based. You will hear a good deal of "Criss, Câlisse, Tabarnak, Ostie, Siboér", and "Viarge". Also, we took your "Shit" and "Fuck". We even adapted "Fuck" to "Focké" to describe something that is fucked-up. However, "Fuck" don't have a impact as big as a powerful "Tabarnak" over here.

Well, the english they teach in school in Québec suck balls hard. I was barely able to mutter some words and I could only understand a few part of the written language. Thanks to my years of weeabooness and RPG gaming, with only english translation available, and my hate for sterile dubs of American movies, I self-learned the english language pretty well. And since I go a computer and the internet, I only go to english sites and forums. I only need to practice some more speaking conversations.

I hope it helped! :)

Don't think its new...I took it from grades 1 through 9. I think it might also be taught in kindergarten in some schools.
