Actually try Air NZ, they are much better.

Both mainstream airlines which tend to cost more.

I was hoping to find a budget airline. Like Jetstar or Tiger Airlines but for the asia region.

A good kayak would set OP back equal to or more than the flight.

northwest airlines, they are shit but usually cheap and they have preferential treatment from tokyo airport (old agreement)

It still costs ~$1500 one way :(

I don't get it. A round trip from Australia to Tokyo set me back around $1000 and that's a total of 18 hours in the sky. What gives?

OP again,

Is there possibly a way to hop onto Mainland China, get a train south and then hop on a boat to Hong Kong that would work out cheaper than travelling by air?

Also, thank you very much to those who have offered input. I really do appreciate it.

Look at the break down of the flight costs. Probably most of it in your case is taxes entering/leaving a certain country. Where I'm at now, I can get a round trip to Costa Rica for like $300, but after all the goddamn taxes, it's almost double.

What happens is some countries have this great idea like, "Hey, let's tack on $1 on every flight and that's going to go to help poverty in this country. The tourists can pay for it." Part of the reason they have to do this in the first place is because they've been embezzling the tax money for so many years and the country is in a shit state. They end up embezzling all the extra revenue from their "tourist taxes" as well, so the cycle continues. To compensate, they devise another tax like fixing the roads or something and add on another $1-5 to the flight. After 20 or so years of doing this, guess what happens.

If air travel is not an option, the only way is to get yourself to Osaka/Kobe, take the ferry to Shanghai and then the train straight to Hong Kong.

If you leave from Tokyo, it's around 120$ and 4-5 hours for the one-way shinkansen ticket to Osaka/Kobe. Then around 230$ and 2 days for the ferry to Shanghai. Lastly the train from Shanghai to Hong Kong is 100-150 $ and around 20 hours.

This takes a lot of time and is a small hassle to get the ferry/train tickets in China. On top of that you need to count for the visa for China, food and other small expenses like taxi/subway fares.

I did this exact same trip last year and took the ferry from Osaka. It's nice if you have the time and don't have a lot of luggage.
