Where are all your trees? Like groups of trees, forests, woods, and the like. Do those even exist in Holland?

Also, why are the Netherlands also called Holland and why are the people from it called the Dutch? Do you live in a windmill and do you wear wooden shoes?

Because a large part of The Netherlands is claimed from the sea you won't find forests there, only vast meadows.
If you like forests and heather you should go to the east of the Netherlands like National park The Veluwe. Pic related

If you like old cities you can try:
-Utrecht
-Leeuwarden (a bit isolated, but in a wonderful part of the country if you like water and sailing)
-Nijmegen (oldest city of The Netherlands)
-Arnhem
-Utrecht
-The cities in Zeeland

If you want something modern then Rotterdam is the place to go

Why did you bother to create land instead of conquering it from someone else? Clearly from your holdings in Asia, you did not lack the ability to conquer, so it must have been something else.

Keep in mind that in some languages, the word for The Netherlands was introduced in a time we did call our selves "Holland" when trading or kicking ass in the Indies. The Japanese word ???? (oranda) stems from "Holland" for example. Interesting enough, the Koreans got it right calling us ???? (ned?lland?).

Add to your list of choices Leiden and Delft if you want the feel of a smaller traditional city. Both also have renowned universities, so they are by no means sleeping or boring places.

If you venture up North, go there across the Afsluitdijk, the famous dike built in the 1930s protecting Amsterdam and the inner lands and making it possible for us to reclaim a complete province from the former sea. (Flevoland). On your way to province capital Leeuwarden, pass by the small harbour city of Harlingen for a maritime feel, and check out the city of Sneek for a different traditional look with lots of old houses and architecture.

Do look up the business hours of museums and points of interest you want to visit beforehand.

Some of them are pretty famous, but do they built beautiful buildings that pass the test of time? I sometimes disagree, although some good counterpoints exist, and wish people would invest in more durable buildings that would be pleasant to look at and live near, in or walk past in 30 years time.

But ignore me when it comes to architecture, I would probably prefer Albert Speer to build my utopian vision of a perfect city to Rem Koolhaas.

The Dutch never conquered land in name of the coutry.
The only reason was to do business.

This is the main reason The Netherlands never claimed Australia (we discovered it first).
We were just thinking "What are we supposed to do with an entire desert continent?" Nothing to trade, nothing to grow.

The surrounding of Arnhem have impressive reminders. This is the "Lonsdale Church" at Oosterbeek, which was used as a fortress by the allies.

On 19th September 1944, Major Richard Lonsdale gathered the survivors of the fighting around St Elisabeth Hospital. Himself wounded, he climbed in the pulpit, and delivered his now famous speech:

"You know as well as I do there are a lot of bloody Germans coming at us. Well, all we can do is to stay here and hang on in the hope that somebody catches us up. We must fight for our lives and stick together. We've fought the Germans before - in North Africa, Sicily, Italy. They weren't good enough for us then, and they're bloody well not good enough for us now. They're up against the finest soldiers in the world. An hour from now you will take up defensive positions north of the road outside. Make certain you dig in well and that your weapons and ammo are in good order. We are getting short of ammo, so when you shoot you shoot to kill. Good luck to you all"

How well do the Dutch understand English?

Are they like the Frenchfags who don't want to pollute their language with their thoughts of those of the dirty English?

Because the Netherlands are a nation of 16 million, whereas Germany is now populated by 85 million people. The odds in WWII were probably even worse. Also, the NL was officially neutral.
>> Anonymous
>>22328
Because the Netherlands has always had a good navy, and nothing else. On water, they were invincible, but on land, different fucking story. Now all they do is get stonned and complain about the 20% immigrant population of NL.

>>22374
Wrong, look up their wars of independence and you'll see that they were quite good at turning Spanish tercios into bloody mush with grapeshot. They were quite good at fortifications and siegecraft.
>> Anonymous
>>22383
The Dutch used their low position strategically.
If an enemy army arrived, they simply flooded a part of the country and send the navy in.

It worked well untill ww2, the Germans just flew over it...

old poast, but try Nijmegen. It's like a little progressive hub in the east of the country. Very awesome.
>> Anonymous
>>22801
>>21763

Nijmegen is always shouting about how they are the oldest, but it doesn't make any sense. Maastricht is older, but they don't have to be 'in yo face!' about it.

Which is what's awesome about Maastricht; it's very laid-back and classy. For instance, the bars are called 'grand café' and the whole city looks nice. So yeah, go to Maastricht. Also, there are actual hills nearby, even caves!

MESTREECH.

The Dutch were planning to stay neutral during WWII, so the military was basically caught napping, formal mobilisation aside.
The only thing they did right were their airplanes, the Germans were scared shitless of their Fokker planes and made it their priority to destroy them as quick as possible. Still, the ones that made it airborne had impressive kill-ratios.
Pic related, the Fokker G1. The P-38 Lightning before it even existed.
>> Anonymous
>>22805

Nijmegen's claims are pretty half-hearted, I agree. Basically there was a Roman settlement there once, by pure chance. It was razed to the ground and abandoned before ages later some guys decided to build a new city and suddenly THEY'RE THE OLDEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY LOL.

But that aside, I like the place. A bit extravagant, do-your-own-thing kind of feel, and a lot more genuine than Amsterdam can feel (touristy place and all that).

there were twin boom planed in the first world war of german design and plently built in the interwar period. at least the 38 had decent armament and speed

>at least the 38 had decent armament and speed

hurrrr?

"At its introduction at the Paris Air Show of 1936, even before its first flight, the G.I was a sensation due to its heavy armament of 8 machine guns in the nose and 1 in a rear turret;"
Sure, the P-38 was a monster, but Fokker's plane was nothing to shake a stick at either.
The P-38 was faster eventually, but one wonders how fast the G.I could have been if fitted with Rolls-Royce Merlin engines like originally intended.
>> Anonymous
>>22851
Just because you slap another four 8mm sewing machines on an aircraft does not make it heavily armed.
>> Anonymous
Um, ok I was playing this WWII strategy game and annexed your country. I wanted to set up a puppet government, but it only gave me the option of creating a country called "Flanders" with different borders.

Was there ever a country called that?
>> Anonymous
>>22851The P-38 was faster eventually

P-38 was faster on it's first flight by well over 100 knots.

That would be a part of Belgium with probably some southern Dutch provinces added.
Flanders is the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium, while Wallonia is the French-speaking part.
The two are frequently at odds with eachother, and Belgium as a country has been under some stress recently.

>>23093
