NEW YORK Anonymous
So I'll be leaving Florida on Sunday to go live in New York for 4 weeks for schooling and I want to know the basics.

What are the must sees?
What to avoid?
How much should I expect to spend on a daily basis?
etc.

A group of men once fought all night to save Coney Island. Maybe you should pay your respects by visiting.

There is absolutely nothing of interest in New York that would be worth your time.

Coney Island is a must, especially during the summer. It's going to be changing soon, so this is definitely the time to take a good hard look at its scummy charm.

Times Square is pretty retarded. Sure, see it to see it, but once you get over the fact that there are a lot of shiny lights, there's not much to it. Don't stay there long.

Go to the Met. Go to the Museum of Natural History. MOMA and Guggenheim and the Whitney can be OK, too. Don't know about the Bowery Museum (a new contemporary art museum).

If I were you, I'd visit the Cloisters, which is way uptown, as well as the various Villages - West Village, East Village, Greenwich Village, and so on. Fun stuff. Make a trek to St. Mark's Place for the finest in comic book shopping, used clothes buying, and DVD buying. Go to The Strand if it's books you like.

Also, Brooklyn Heights is nice. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Also, be sure to check some of the restaurants in Cobble Hill slash Carroll Gardens slash Boerum Hill. Young chefs frequently open new restaurants in those areas, so you can often get a five-star meal for fairly cheap.

Also, hang around Washington Square Park to gawp at all the hot-ass NYU students.

I live in brooklyn

Coney island is lame and filled with apartments and people who speak russian

If you go to coney island - Don't expect to meet anyone unless you speak russian

If you want to see a fucking board walk near a beach - Then be my guest

also it's crowded as fuck during summer

Go with a camera - You can take pictures of hot girls

Candid stuff - You know - ""voyeur beach"""

Anyway, i fucking hate brooklyn

I hate the constant flow of chinese people i see daily

It's like basically living in china

They look the same shit - they stink - they spit every minute - They all short

they all say - HAI YEAH - CHONG WAH

It's very annoying.

I don't appreciate asian culture

But anyway, i can't do shit

I just don't like it - Brooklyn used to be all italian and irsh.

Now it's fucking all chinese

how nice

I go to school here, this guy is pretty much right.

Only things in the Bronx that are worth anything are the Botanical Gardens & the Bronx Zoo (across the street from my school)

In the city, Washington Square is ok. Just today there was some rap concert I saw when I passed by. There's usually some sort of hippie drum circle there and plenty of hot girls. If you're college aged, decently good with people, and wanting to go out, you can meet some people there who will show you a good time.

In terms of Museums, don't waste your time on the Moma or Guggs. Go to the Frick Collection. It's on 70th and Central Park W (I think) Cloisters is awesome too.

The upper east side is my favorite part of town. Great restaurants, great atmosphere, and the people are getting younger and younger.

Don't do the Statue, Coney Island is pretty cool just for its old charm, and the Empire State Building is actually pretty cool or the view.

Also, Little Italy in the summer at night is amazing. The lights and atmosphere really can't be beat.

Lastly, I'd chill in the Village. Pretty much related to the above part about the Square. Tons to do.

Go to the top of the Palisades (across the Hudson River from the city) via NJ Transit bus (I recommend bus #128, which runs right on the cliff's edge) from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Good view.

Try the following:

-Hudson River Park
-Central Park
-Chinatown
-Staten Island ferry
-Other ferries
-Beaches in NJ or on/near Long Island
-Seafood at City Island (northeastern Bronx)
-Stew Leonard's (all the way out in the burbs, but the Yonkers location - at least - can be accessed by transit.)
-subways/path/LIRR
-(if you have the time and money) top of the Rock(efeller Plaza), deck of Empire State Bdg, Statue of Liberty, "fast ferries", Circle Line, tour buses; if you don't have the money, NYC has an excellent bus network.
- Sure, check out Washington Square/ NYU. Also: the Cloisters/ Columbia.
-Go hunting for the Long Island Battleground. (Hint: it's Prospect Park in Brooklyn)

Go to Prospect Park. It's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than Central Park.

Central Park is gay and full of tourists. Prospect Park is win and full of forests.

Oh, and I second chilling in Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Cobble Hill. Nice area. Cool kids. Plenty of things to do.

If you're into books, try the bookstores or the New York Public Library (one of my favorite buildings is its flagship on Bryant Park, a nice European-style palace).
