Jakarta, Indonesia. I'll be teaching english there since I have some people I know over there as well. I hear its a fun place to be, just stay out of trouble and dont screw around with the islamic people. (which will be hard considering they're 85% islamic) Anyone have any useful tips?

Jakartafag reporting.

Ignore>>35485We have our share of extremists but they're mainly East Javanese so don't worry. Yes, we have lots of clubs and if you're want to enjoy Jakarta night life, head to Taman Ria Senayan as a starting point. Pic related. Use this also as a starting point: http://www.jakartajavakini.com/pages/edition/june-2008.php?home

Indonesia may have the largest Muslim population in the world, but we're generally more relaxed about religion than say, the Malaysians. One more tip, when you arrive in Jakarta, hire an experienced, trustworthy driver ASAP. Public transportation sucks and Jakartans drive like mad. Good drivers know short cuts through side streets and stuff.

Indeed i'll have to. How's Bogor though? I heard about the traffic and will probably do so as soon as the job comes through. I have a friend who's indonesian and just went home about a month ago. She says bule's who drive will be picked on by the cops for no reason sometimes. So hire a driver.

Technically I have studied islam for a while, but never converted.. I 'm not really religious at all. Its just nice to know things..

I started dating an indonesian girl when i was in Nevada. Had lots of fun, and then found two or three friends moved to jakarta. Considering that I am a TEFL Teacher, I figured why not look into it. So I contacted a wonderful company there who would be happy to have me. So i figured i'd try it. Two more years until Air Force.

You sound like me anonymous. Meet a girl studying in Ausfailia, and started going out, except she had to go back home after a year, so now it's long distance (just shy of 2 years by a month)

I went to Malay for a week with her and her family, and it's pretty full on. Went to Indo for a month, and had a ball. She's muslim, but that doesn't really matter. Most people don't make it an issue. Just be polite and everything will be fine.
You'll probably suffer culture shock when you get there, because it's unlike anything you've seen before (of course, unless you've been there before) but it'll grow on you.

Have fun anon!

you know alot of the malaysian girls 'studying' in australia are really just in australia to work as hookers. The whole studying english is just a way to get a visa, same goes for korean girls and ones from singapore

But thanks for that!

Strange to see indonesian threads all seem to end up with some degree of random bashing on malaysians for little or no reason.
Is there some kinda of enmity between the two?

Both are muslim countries, moreso in indonesia. Indonesia seems to be less stable in recent times with terrorist bombings around and the race riots in the late 90's (in the wake of the currency crisis) targeting the chinese/christian minority in Jakarta and elsewhere.

Malaysia had some protests against their government late last year due to the elections that were to be held soon after. Not sure if anyone was killed then.

I have met chinese malaysians/indonesians here in Australia and they seem to get along fairly well though.

Jakartafag reporting again. The thing is you see, us Indonesians claim that the Malaysians try to steal our cultural identity and sell it off as their own. Also, they seem to think they're superior to Indonesians since they're part of the Commonwealth and we're on our own. Sure, both Indonesia and Malaysia have Muslim majorities, but unlike the Malaysians, Islam ISN'T the State Religion in Indonesia.

On the Chinese Indonesians/Chinese Malaysians, they're basically hated because of accusations of accumulating wealth that rightfully belongs to native Indonesians/Malaysians. Thankfully, anti-Chinese sentiments have died down somewhat in Indonesia since 2000. Don't know about Malaysia though.

OP here.

So I guess what i'm asking is, I just had my fiancee get a house in Bogor. I'll be working in jakarta and raising a family. She already has children and I plan on keeping them out of the US until college or whatever means. But 5 years down the road, i'm looking at the air force. Curious how i'll be affected being a Bule who minds his own business.

Jakartafag again. There's always International Schools, especially in the south of Jakarta so it shouldn't be too far from Bogor. Hell of a drive to school though. If you mind your own business, no one should bother you. It's not the 1950s where "bule" aren't welcomed. Just be careful, people might try to cheat on you because you're a foreigner, asking ridiculous prices and such. Learn the language, it's piss easy. What do you mean you'll be in the Air Force in 5 years? Explain.

OP again.
Well I need some sort of retirement, so 20 years in the air force will do it easy. besides i'm learning Bahasa at the moment (indo) from my fiancee and i'm teaching her kids english. kinda weird how that works out. Usually i'd take train, because its 30 minutes via train, and i hear the police like to pick on bule drivers. I am very accustom to the muslim people. Some of my closest friends are islamic and I have been taught by them, as well as taken interest in it. But i'm not a religious person I guess you could say. I hear bogor has their fair share of bule, but work in Jakarta is better paying. Hell i'd love to move to Bali instead. :>

>>35879
Jakartafag again. Don't know much about the police harassing foreign drivers, although it's true that it's a rarity. The last bunch of foreigners I saw driving when I was still in Jakarta (studying overseas) were Russian diplomats, judging by their plates.

Don't worry too much about religion. As long as you don't outright insult people against their religion, you'd be fine.

Try to get in touch with the expat community as well since there are lots of them in Jakarta. That's as much as I can say right now, unless you have any other questions, Anon.

>>35888
Thanks for the tip. Actually i'm curious. Is it true i can just fly to jakarta and pick up my 30 day visitation visa right there?

>Some of my closest friends are Islamic
>Islamic

What?
It's _Muslim_.

I also don't quite understand how people are so worried about religion, being accustomed to it etc. Are you Muslim? No? Then as long as you aren't drawing offensive cartoons or doing anything stupid, I wouldn't worry.

>Anyone have any useful tips?
Tell them you hate America and support the destruction of the free world. Also, don't bring any bacon. Also, convert to Islam and bully the religious minorities for lulz. Don't drink beer. Don't wear any crosses. Don't laugh when they tell you the Jews rule from the shadows.

Better yet, stay home and avoid tall buildings.
>> Anonymous
>>35907
You can rock up and buy it from a machine at the airport. Enjoy waiting in line for 40 minutes though. Oh, then lining up to actually get your passport checked.

But during that time, you can laugh at the sign that says 'Death Penalties for Drug Traffickers. Welcome to Indonesia'

As the Jakartafag said, try to get in touch with some of the expats, they're your best bet for help, plus you'll make some new mates. I lived in Jakarta for a month, and I made a few expat friends, bule's tend to stick together.

Generally, if you respect people, most of them will respect you. Don't be a dick and think you are superior, just be normal. You might find some of the smaller places will try to get an extra buck out of you, but you can normally talk them down. Speaking the language helps, as they know you're not just dicking around, and they'll have a laugh with you.
