If you want to get some reasonably easy mountain pass driving experience and take a long loop through the region, do this. I like to drive just to see things, so if you're looking for an actual destination and not a day trip, do something else:
- drive south to OC. Depending on where in LA you are, suggest 405 south -> 710 south - get on PCH - head north on the 5 - take 74 over the Ortega Mountains - get on 15 north to 91, or continue on 74 to 215 and 60 - go home
I did this sort of thing a lot when I first started driving, drove all over socal to learn the area better. Gas was a lot cheaper back then, though. There's a lookout point on 74 through the Ortegas, if you go on a weekend you can see a lot of planes and skydivers and shit over the lake in that valley. Just don't get too distracted cuz people are retarded on that road and die all the time due to idiocy, or so it used to be.
If you want to leave the region and sightsee, go to SF and get a transit pass. Fucking awesome place. Northbound 5 is an easy route, just make sure you bring a lot of music.
