I plan to live in Japan for a year and a half in a couple of years. Is it too early to scope out housing, or should I start looking now?

I know nothing when it comes to renting a house/apartment, but my judgement is based purely on distance from center of Japan, size of apartment, facilities, and neighbourhood.

Where is a good place to live for fairly inexpensive? I checked a couple of apartments for rent in Sapporo and it's going to run me 7,000$ a year, which is respectible.

If it matters, I'm a white Canadian male.

This is the floor layout for the apartment I was looking at. 60,000 yen a month (720,000 a year or approx 7000$ CAD). It's 26.2 meters squares.

If you go for only a year, rent because it will drain you of far too much to be worth buying, even an apartment is too expensive in major cities. In a minor city you could do it but you might miss some things you most wanted to do.

Is Sapporo a very busy place? I've heard it's like the countryside. A one room (10m squared) in Tokyo is 70,000 yen a month (8000$ a year). I'm opting for a nice area, not really busy. But easy transport to the rest of Japan is a huge plus.

Yeah. All appliances and furniture is included, as well as internet is free. There's smaller rooms for about 4000$ CAD a year, but there's no kitchen alcove, no shower, no toilet... just bed and desk and mini fridge. I need a kitchen and bathroom.

okonomiyaki. It rocks.
I'm studying in japan until august 09, already did one year here. Nice country, sometimes difficult to get used to their weird habits, but still I have a lot of fun.
Speaking japanese is not really an option.
And finally average studio near tokyo is 80000yens, like 500 euros. Sorry, too lazy to convert. There often are all the appliances inside the room. It depends.
And Sapporo itself is like tokyo, but smaller. But it gets nothing to be in the middle of nowhere. Quite nice for Japan.

OP here,

Are you on a working holiday visa or? My departure I have scheduled for when I finish college (haven't started but am in September), but if I can study in Japan that'll be a great plus. One I've looked into is Temple University Japan, you don't possibly go there, do you?

don't forget key money in your rent calculation -- can be as much as 6 months' rent and is NON-REFUNDABLE

also don't forget racism and japanese not wanting to rent to a foreigner

/used to live there

$8,000 a year PLUS a deposit AND key money

deposit varies by landlord, but key money will set you back another $4K
