Hey /trv/,
I'll be in Germany next month, particularly in Hamburg. However, I'd also like to go to München. How do I go about doing this? Train or Plane?

pic related, as it shows what i'm asking for

Train if you've got the time, durrr... Scenic route is scenic.

Well, i've heard from a lot of people that planes are usually cheaper (ironic)..so I'm debating. I also forgot to clarify..whats the best way to go? bahn.de?

They are when you book early and unless you take the weekend ticket. But weekend tickets are only valid on regional trains, so you'd be switching trains like 10 times on that route.
For trains, yes, bahn.de.

how is that ironic?

There really is only one train to take in Germany man...

Take the slow-train, the kind that stops everywhere. Get off at some random village and look around, and get back on the train. What I did, and it was pretty cool to meet germans in these dinky little horse towns and drink at the one bar, ect.

GErmany is a beutiful country, if your flying around in the local flights or taking the Express-Bahn thing whatever, your missing out.

I guess you could say that plane tickets are usually the most expensive way to travel so by having them as cheapest of the options, that's the irony.

The only (there are SOME exceptions) long-distance train operator in Germany is Deutsche Bahn -> bahn.de.
In the middle of next month you can get a one-way ticket to Munich using the ICE for 49 Euro. It's 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 hours, so it pays off, although I think the maximum speed on that route is only 250 km/h.
Using the weekend ticket it takes about 13 hours, but it's cheaper, so do what you want.
Planes are an alternative, nonetheless I'd guess most really cheap seats are already booked out.

That's not irony at all, and flights have been getting cheaper and cheaper, especially short distance ones.

In my country we say trains are greyhound speed at airline prices

are plane tickets usually more expensive than train? they arent around here (and i'm not a eurofag)

too bad that wasn't me(OP), but yeah, surprising would probably have been a better word. anyway..

Hm..thats good to hear..I heard about the ICE, but never bothered checking it out. Thanks anon

try going by fachwerk. It's a beautiful mode of decoration.

oops, you meant transportation? oh well.

Be aware that plane tickets only look cheaper. A lot of airlines try to trick you. The ticket itself costs, let's say €50 from Hamburg to Munich, BUT you are only allowed to take your hand luggage with you. Additional baggage costs extra up to €200 per piece and you get no seat no. . Who comes first, gets first.

Take the train, enjoy the landscape. Also the Munich mainstation is right in the middle of the city.

i know its been mentioned, but you should consider the weekend ticket, especially if you are traveling with other people. you can have up to five people on the ticket for 35eu, and travel for a full day. you have to take regional trains, but you will see a lot of the countryside, and can stop for meals etc at places along the way.

if you are alone you may not have to buy one if you can find people traveling on them who are willing to let you tag along

I dislike those people always asking around, but it's not like I wouldn't do the same, if the situation asked for it. It won't be difficult to find a group for Hamburg<->München, I think.

well especially if you offer them like 10eu

Have fun in Naziland!

It's more likely than you think.
The price is so high, because if you don't take luggage with you, they will rent the space to postal services. Also they don't have to raise their ticket prices that way. But the Airlines first tell you this after you've checked in. It was a big scandal in the media in the last few weeks.

Hmm that's totally something I should consider as I'm traveling with two other friends.
