Hey, /trv/. What's it like in Singapore? I hear they're encouraging foreigners to move there*. Is the Singlish really that bad, and would I have to know one of the non-English foreign languages to move there? How's the quality of life? How's the nightlife? Tell me other things you think are interesting.

*I heard this from Wikipedia, you guys, so I don't really know shit.

My friend who I knew as a kid lives there now. He says its nice but hot + humid as hell year long. Stuff is expensive and strict laws are a bit of a pain.

absolutely a dull place to live

I could see why it might appeal to some 4channers though. Asian but not really ethnocentric, strict punishment for crimes, lots of electronics, and pretty skyline.

It's a pretty safe city.... they used to have that "you steal, we cut your hand off" law. But not anymore.

I don't think.

I was pretty much originally attracted solely because it had a pretty skyline. That picture I included with it made me like it a little more, and the novelty of it being a city-state made me think it might be kind of cool.

It's illegal to have chewing gum there.

Clean and gorgeous city. Nightlife is great, but I also had a local taking me out for entertainment when I go on business.

Engrish is just like most of Asia. Very difficult to understand sometimes, but you get used to it quickly and can decipher.

I've been looking into moving to Singapore, so this thread is very relevant to my interests.

The big thing that I wonder about are the laws. I hear lots of little tidbits about no chewing gum or sagging pants, but overall is it much different from any other modern nation? What's their stance on sex, drugs, pornography, etc.? Are things like hentai illegal?

Enjoy your authoritarian state and lack of human rights and civil liberties of any sort.

what's it like in singapore? it's akin to nazi germany, r u insane?

singlish is just a side-effect of being multilingual. slangs and stuff just gets mixed up when they speak.

english is all you need to live there. knowing chinese (mandarin and the various chinese dialects) definitely helps to impress the locals.

quality of life is pretty good, may be the best in that part of asia.

nightlife might be a little dull. singapore's a dull place to live in.

as for the censorship and stuff, some people get used to it easily. because it is undeniably a wealthy nation, singapore's proof that a dictatorship does work if there is a good leader.

i wouldn't say it's identical to what we've read about nazi germany. no doubt the media is controlled by the government, so no sensitive racial, sexual and political issues are discussed on tv, radio or the papers. but then, there's always the internet.

city's clean, no chewing gums, absolutely no drugs, strict laws, everything, including cigarettes and alcohol, is bloody expensive relative to the rest of southeast asia.

food is always one of those things they promote to attract foreigners. you can find cuisines from all over asia in singapore.

but if you absolutely insists on living in an asian country with more freedom of speech, then consider hong kong. they're quite similar.

Singapore's an ad for plutocracy.

Sage city-country.

look at it this way, if you enjoy freedom, don't live in singapore.

at least you can still get your 4chan fix on the internet. don't know if that really means anything to you though.

I'd rather live in Hong Kong since it's a lot easier to find drugs.

Went to Singapore a month ago and it was fine. Cost of living is expensive though and being hot and humid guarantees you'll spend a fuckton on water or drinks. 7-11 is your bestfriend here.

Nightlife... Ugghh normal partying+clubbing. Try breaking the laws after midnight just for kicks. GO JAYWALKING and impress your Singaporean friends (mine were so impressed (or drunk) that they started chanting "CRIME" as we walked which change d to em shouting BREAKING THE LAW when I played Judas priest's song on my phone.

Also never eat chicken rice that is more than 6 hours old. My bro ate some and puked all day long (3rd time this happened with chicken rice).

Oh all indians are your friends, or so it seems cause they greet you with "Hello Friend".

Lots of delicious little legal lolis there too DFC at that. I had to change to tighter pants on my second day cause I was either half erect or fully erect thinking of delicious DFC.

And umm yeah you can spend the day at Changi. They have a pool movie theaters (for free) just dick around but dont hang in one place too long unless asleep or gaurds will accost you.
