What does /trv/ think of Chris McCandless? Hero, idiot, selfish, daring, or maybe inconsiderate?

"Death's a fierce meadowlark but to die having made Something more equal to centuries Than muscle and bone, is mostly to shed weakness. The mountains are dead stone, the people Admire or hate their stature, their insolent quietness, The mountains are not softened or troubled And a few dead men's thoughts have the same temper."

Does his joy with death mean nothing?

It means you're gay.

I quoted him in my essay justifying a line from Thoreau's Walden.

So what if he was "stupid"? He wasn't aiming to have a long, healthy life... he was trying to live in nature and get connected to it and live the rest of his life without money and material goods.

I only wish I had the balls. Unfortunately, I don't think I'd be good at any of the shit he did.

pretty sure you could do everything he did with a map and not end up dying in an excruciatingly painful way. but then again you wouldn't be posthumously worshipped by other fucking stupid bastards, which is probably the real thrill.

I would love to travel the world like that, as a wandering hobo. That would be really something.

If I did what he did. I'd learn some hunting and surviving skills first. To me, he seemed very naive.

Impulsive, maybe. Naive, I don't think so. He figured out a goal. He kept that goal in mind throughout his schooling. He went for his goal after he graduated. He achieved his goal. And now, he's a legend, and many people for years are going to read the story about him and be reminded that we don't need all these things that we really do take for granted.

Apparently we do, condisering he died without all those things.

He didn't need those things to live a happy and meaningful life. I do think he somewhat disrespected the land and by ignoring the natives advice, also with what he did with the moose.

Yes, but while I think what he did was awesome, if he made some plans beforehand maybe he'd live a little longer and therefore, be able to travel more before dying.

He could be working on the farm and writing a book, damn.

He was trying to bring back the Shakers & Quakers, those transcendentalist motherfuckers. He failed horribly.

wilderness appealed to those bored and disgusted with man and his works. it not only offered an escape from society but also an ideal stage of the romantic individual to exercise the cult that he frequently made of his own soul. the solitude and total freedom of that wilderness created a perfect setting for either melancholy or exultation.

he was naive and dumb, neither fearing or respecting nature.
Fear is not needed but respect is.
If you dont have the knowledge or skills nescesary for surviving you should be very afraid of something that can swallow you whole and hide your corpse for months on end.
I would easily survive where he died becuse I got the training and knowledge.
He was just in it for the mental masturbation.
There are even those men that would be able to go there naked and survive until age took them.
I would not becuse I am a weak faggot. But he was weaker.

>From early childhood, his teachers noticed that McCandless was unusually strong-willed. As he grew older, he coupled this with an intense idealism and physical endurance. In high school, he served as captain of the cross-country team, where he urged his teammates to treat running as a spiritual exercise in which they were "running against the forces of darkness....all the evil in the world, all the hatred."

Craz~y.

Haha, just read his story. What a dumb shit. Well-meaning, but stupid nonetheless.

Though he was foolish and certainly acted stupid from times, I kind of admire him.
