Immigration laws seem to be a bitch in most places, specially when it comes to freelance work. Are there any countries where you can legally work freelance while you are travelling there, or even better, that grant you a residence permit, no questions asked, as long as you can take care of yourself and are not a burden to the country? It's the dream, after all, work from anywhere, the question is, is it attainable?

Some countries have the working holiday agreement but they're only for about a year or so.

Sadly, doesn't apply to me.

Besides, what I mean by freelance is not casual work, but more like an online business or something you can do with just a computer and the Internet. It seems most countries don't allow that, even if people do it anyway. Are there any where it is actually legal to work this way? Thanks for answering, btw.

WHMs can be a decent stepping stone, if you can find decent work there usually a company will be glad to spring for a permit, as it is a little troublesome but not that costly.

Why would you need to work in that country to operate an online business? Talk about going arse about face.

Set up your online business with a country in mind, and if it gains momentum, you get to travel on business visas.

What kind of country would let you in if you were a borderline? Either be rich, or sit put.

Could you not just get tourist visas for 3 or 6 months, and then move on again? that bypasses the need for real visas, if you're not working in the country (you'll be working on the internet in your own country) there's no problems. I've known people who do this whilst playing poken on the internet, seems to work for some people
