Everyone is pissed off and the food is so bad there are 30 minute waits at McDonalds, KFC, and Subway. They don't know how to take care of their art and history (excepting Papa Lenin, but he isn't much more than just a wax statue now) so you can pay to see all of these beautiful pieces rot off the walls of their museums. This might be because it feels like there hasn't really been any renovation since 1976. The 'hot women' thing is something I believe to be an illusion. They only have somewhat attractive -bodies- because they don't ever eat, only drink and smoke. Basically if you want to be in a place where smiling can get you jumped and you don't mind an odd stench everywhere you go I guess you could check out Russia.

I went there last weekend as part of the armys welfare activities (Yes, the army organised a trip for soldiers to get drunk and see culture in a foreign nation).

Probably one of the best weekends ive ever had, the clubs were amazing, and vodka is not only cheap, but extremely good. Thats why you have to be careful with russian vodka, its so good you dont really think about how much you are actually drinking.
As for culture, there were several very good museum, unfortunately they did only have russian text, so a guide is essential, the monuments to the fallen in world war 2 were absolutely breath-taking, and it was fascinating to see the city.
There was only one wooden building in the whole city, other than that there were only blocks, each either 5 or 9 stories tall.
This was because in soviet russia you had to have one elevator in building taller than 5 stories, and two elevators in buildings with 10 or more.
The eating as absolutely fantastic, if you choose to go to a mcdonalds when youre in russia then fine, be an idiot. Because eating well is incredibly cheap and good restaurants are easy to find.

Foreginers should never EVER take a taxi or move out on their own, some guys from the company got beaten up and robbed.
If approached by strangers while out partying you should only shrug and say "English" and "Njet", and walk away, the criminals can tell a foreigner from a mile away, and know they have money, but they cant have any power over you if they cant communicate.
The reason the guys from my company got robbed was because one of them had grown up in russia and started talking with some shady characters, in addition, they were too drunk.

But russia is awesome, and very cheap, its a country steadily climbing the ladder, and they are also good at preserving their own history. If you can, visit russia.

Russia isnt exactly the land of the smiles, this is because smiling was considered unpolite in the era of the soviet union (something about not showing everyone how damn succesfull you are) but if you give a smile, you tend to get a smile back.
But you should not get insulted just because people are slightly more closed than they are in your hometown.

Looks to me like the only thing wrong with russia is you.

What? I would think a knife was enough to rob someone.

Unless you walk into a dark alley then its unlikely to happen, the russian police and prison system is BRUTAL and noone wants to get arrested.
Its not Mos Eisley for crying out loud.

Ofcourse, nothing is impossible, but that goes for the whole world, theres always a danger when walking out your front door.

I didn't smile at anyone as I was trying to blend in, but I know some people I was with who did smile got shit about it. We also got shit for just being around or existing if passers by heard english. My food experiences weren't as pleasant as>>8765and I wasn't eating at any of the fast food places because I didn't feel like standing in a crowded restaurant for an hour with angry people waiting to get food. Maybe St. Petersburg and Moscow are just the most unpleasant places to be. Who knows. I'm not saying I had a bad time, it just wasn't very pleasant.

Come to Vladivostok.
There´s not much to do here but it´s on the other side of the country so you won´t have to deal with tourists. We´re also close to the chinese border if you get bored and wanna visit China lol. And come visit me if you want gay sex, seriously.

I see you know nothing of the Soviet Russia. You have no idea of the beauty behind the Iron curtain, you do not understand the pure power and spirit, that grew with the united, equal people of Mother Russia. The spirit still lives on, but only the ones not polluted by the capitalist-filth can feel it. Maybe one day, the people will not only feel the spirit, but the great Force as well!
