You'll want to bring up WWII and Hitler as often as possible. They're good sports about it. You'll all have a good laugh.

This seems like a good thread to ask... Can any German anons give any tips to prospective tourists coming to the country? Aside from not being retards and mentioning Hitler, what annoying tourist trait pisses of the average German citizen the most? Any important points of etiquette to keep in mind?

German is quite ok place to visit, lots of nice architecture and people are ok, but I did freak out couple times when I saw bartenders smoking and drinking behind the bar.

Aside from mentioning every WWII-related stereotype ever created or getting too drunk because you`re not used to german beer/ alcohol-laws, most germans are very open and helpful towards tourists.

Also, in most citys you`re probably going to visit, the inhabitants are used to tourists from all around the world (e.g. asians photographing everything they see).

Also, many people more or less know a few bits of enlish.

Not anymore. There is a law since january which forbids to smoke in bars and in public buildings. I don't see anything wrong when they drink behind the bar, as long as they can work.

In restaurants you can usually choose by yourself where to sit. Don't expect the waitress to seat you.
Don't call the waitress or any other girls "Fräulein" . Call them "Junge Dame", "Bedienung" or simply adress them in english.
A lot of people in Germany speak English. Not very good, but normally they can help you.
In Bavaria people often seem to be in a bad mood or grumpy. That's normal. If you go to Bavaria, don't be suprised to see people WITHOUT Lederhosen.
Don't try to speak difficult german words, for example when ordering something. Show the waitress what you want and she'll bring it.
Don't be shocked to see teenagers drink beer in public or smoke.
You are allowed to drink beer and whine at the age of 16, as well as smoke cigarettes.
Licor is allowed for 18year olds.
