I have stayed in many, all over Australia, Spain and a few in the UK and the US.

Had a paid of jeans nicked once.

Generally a really positive exerience.

Shared rooms are a drag for neurotic people like me.

Bringing equipment to camp in the car while on long trips is convenient.

That's all I have to say about that.

Hostels rock. Mostly young people from all over the world. Take some time in the evening to sit in the lounge and meet new people. The kind of people that stays at hostels normally is fairly open minded and you can easily start conversations.
Or just sit down on a table with group and join their conversations.
If you are completely lost ask them where they are from - exchange stereotypes and have a laugh!

Yah, hostels are neat. There's a general understanding that you're all there 'cause it's cheap, no one wants anything stolen and you all respect each others space/privacy.

It sounds like something I'd have a nightmare about.

I enjoy hostels more than hotels.
You meet up with new people,
you can ask them pretty much anything that crosses ur mind.
If you're afraid you cant start a convo, dont be.
I am that type but Ive met alot of people.

hostels ftw!!

yeah hostels are awesome. Iprefer the smaller one, I have stayed at a couple super huge ones and they are HORRIBLE. They are best when they have a bar inside. The only thing I don't like is when the shower is not ensuite, i will not stay in a hostel where there isnt a private bathroom in the room (even if I'm sharing a room with 5 or 7 other people.) The only weird expirience I had was in a hostel in munich (A&O city hauptbahnhof) it was full of rowdy underage kids and OLD people, one of which who spoke no english and totally cornered me at the bar it was super akward, the security gaurd and the bartender was just watching, it was so bad the bartender let us leave with out returning our bottle (we had not paid the deposit) then there was this muslim guy in the room, which was an 8 person dorm, I felt kind of bad because he was in bed by like 8 each night, and there were all these drunk rowdy people going in and out of the rooms and up and down the halls until all hours. He said he was there on business... but what kind of business would put you up in a shitty hostel and make you share a room with 7 teenagers. then this creepy guy kept trying to talk to me while i was sleeping, and when i woke up in the middle of the night he was butt naked lying on his bed! This was all at the same hostel mind you.

other than that i have really great expiriences, met really interesting people, and found some REALLY nice hostels. just read the reviews and do your homework.

I dont mind them at all. They are good if you are travelling alone or in a small group , so they act as agood way to meet people to go out with and drink etc

At a hostel in Kyoto I saw the most horrific set of manboobs I have ever had the terror to encounter. I still see them when I close my eyes. There were scars and everything. What did he do to himself?!

In conclusion, stay away from hostels.

I've stayed in about 7 hostels all over Europe(all shared rooms). Not one bad experience. Lots of fun, just be sure to check weather they have a curfew or anything shitty like that. Its more fun with friends.
pic related: its what your floor will look like

personally I would have concerns leaving thousands of euros of camera equipment in a room shared with people I never met before.

I stayed at a hostel in Montreal and shared the whole room with friends, so didn't have to worry about random people or anything. It wasn't bad at all for the price and considering we only used it to sleep in. Good times.

I stayed at a hostel in Germany once. I woke up one morning with a sore ass. The guy next to me said he had fucked me in the ass at night, but he laughed in a way that made me unsure if he was being serious or not.

In conclusion, hostels are for homos.

I've stayed in a couple in Germany, one in Berlin and one in Garmisch. They actually weren't all that bad.

The one in Berlin, the Aletto youth hotel (hostel), was pretty nice, though the food sucked, as did the bathroom, as it smelled like eggs the whole time.

Later I stayed at one in Garmisch, it was super nice, only bad thing is there weren't bathrooms or showers in the rooms.

Only thing I'd suggest would be to bring a pair of flipflops whenever you go to shit/shower. I caught a little bit of athlete's foot since I showered once in the shared shower without mine on.

Overall, everyone I was around was pretty nice, and the experience wasn't all that bad.

stayed in hostels across europe, most are good and the shit ones give you a good story wherever you go next. having said that the shit ones are usually only so because of a bit of dirt/peeling paint and being in a shitty part of town.

sites like hostelworld.com are good for booking
