My first time abroad in over 10 years... pick a country! Anonymous
As the title suggests, it will be 10 years since I was last abroad, which was in August 1998. Later this year or early next year I will plan a trip for two weeks, alone, somewhere in the world.

ITT you decide where I go, or better yet, pick a country from each continent so I don't get a shitload of JAPAN replies.

A few conditions:
- must not be a predominantly English-speaking country
- must not be the Netherlands, Italy, Greece, Cyprus (been there already)
- must not be a complete warzone, although countries with political problems are okay

This is just going to be a vacation, a time to relax, soak in the culture, and maybe see some historical sites.

If your American, I suggest a place in South America. You can pass of as a local and not draw too attention to yourself. White people live in Argentina, Brazil and Chile and whatnot. Just wear some shorts and a soccer tee-shirt and you'll blend right in, while you adjust to the culture.

Anyways, try Brazil.

North America, I guess Mexico.

Africa. Best stick to the muslim countries, with the somewhat less insane and dangerous hell holes of Libya or Eygpt. Morroco, maybe.
Europe-Spain
Asia- China

How about Sweden or just Scandinavia in general?
We (swede here) learn english very early in school so u don't have to worry about don't being understood lol.
U could always try Italy or Turkey if u wanna have some exclusive food lol ^^

Hungary or Denmark in EU
Morocco in Africa
Japan (yeah, I know, but its still nice country tourist-wise) or Vietnam in Asia
Russia in Russia (Trans-Siberian Train - a must)
Chile in South America
Antartctica in Antarctica

ICELAND! no place like it

Quebec Canada (Old Quebec is pretty nice, feels like a different country)

Brazil (get yourself a nice shemale and have fun)

Hungary (because Hungary is awesome)

Russia (Because Russia is also awesome)

Libya (Because it's the only country in Africa that isn't starving to death and dieing of AIDS)

New Zealand (Because I didn't want to say Australia)
>> Anonymous
I'd recommend Vietnam. Vietnamese are hustlers when it comes to foreigners, but you won't lose out on too much money. Everything is cheap. I guarantee that it will be an "adventure" you'll never forget.

N. America: No idea
S. America: Ecuador, nice people, mountains, Galapagos islands, small enough to see in two weeks
Europe: Portugal, small, cheap, nice weather, good food
Africa: I've heard Uganda is nice these days
Sub continent: Sri Lanka, my friends went there, liked it
Asia: Thailand. Great food, beaches, Muay Thai
Oceania: Fiji is nice.

Middle East: I second Lebanon, even if>>28983was just joking.
It has a really beautiful landscape, fuck-awesome historical sites, friendly and open people, a shitload of hot bitches and a crazy nightlife. Just stay clear of Hizbollah-ridden faggot areas in the south and the Beirut ghettoes. Tripoli in the north is surrounded by ancient ruins and other awesome shit, but it's much more conservative than Beirut.

Europe: Russia, it's fucking fantastic. Try St. Petersburg, I find it a lot nicer than Moscow. Less expensive, less 'harsh', and a lot safer.

Iranian visas are a bitch to get unless you know someone living in Iran. Sad really, because it is supposed to be a lovely country to visit, despite its shitty government.

Also, I'm surprised nobody has recommended China yet. The food is spectacular, everything is dirt cheap, and unless you go to a growing city like Shenzhen, there's a shitload of historical sites to see. Just steer clear of Beijing this August for obvious reasons.

Finland. All finns start learning English at the age 10 (or younger) so communicating is easy. Also many people speak French and German too.

Poland. Sopot. A very friendly town in a very friendly country. Not everyone can speak English, but many do. If you make some friends, you can get to know the culture a lot better (and get into "inside" places)

Why not in México? I've been in europe for some months, and in various Latin American countries and i still love my country.
Mexico is really more than the beaches and the alcohol.
I would recomend the desert of San Luis Potosí more specifically royal fourtheen (real de catorce) for cosmic experiences with peyote (If you're in that stuff about finding yourself)
If you like surreal things i would recommend Guadalajara, the downtown is a weird mix of french and mexican culture, and its state Jalisco is known for be where the mariachis began, also the nigthtime there is great, lot of europeans (especially french ones) go there and live, because they love the surreal life in there.
For a most nature oriented travel i would recommend Chiapas or Oaxaca, both have great natural landscapes (Actually the whole country have, but some of the best are there)
For seeing ruins almost every state has its own ruins of ancient cultures, the most outstanding ones are (in ym opinion) la quemada in Zacatecas, Tenochtitlan in the capital, and the giants of tula in tula, all of them have a lonely and introspective atmosphere that surrounds them
Or well, the last option is always the capital, Mexico City, it was once the most populated city on the world (we were a centralist country) so i'm sure you'll find a lot of culture there.
Just tell me if you're interested maybe i can make a roadchart with attractions.
Pic related, Guadalajara downtown

Shanghai, China

You might like Cartagena/Barranquilla, Colombia. There are hardly any major political problems there, for Colombia, and the women are fuckhot. However, it is in the equator so you will sweat your balls off. Maybe you could go to Barranquilla for Carnaval?

Buenos Aires is amazing too, and their winter isn't all too bad, if you were to go now. If you were to wait for their summer, I'd say go to BA and then take a bus to Mar de Plata.
>> ?????????? !JiHADLZ54Q
If you like ancient ruins and shit, fuck yeah Lebanon.

Also, bitch whining about civil war. You're not any less safe there than in any large cities. I'd say you're more likely to get mugged and shot by nigras in an alley in NYC than being kikebombed in Beirut.

You can be on ALL SOUTHAMERICA if you have about 3 or 4 months, is very cheap to be around there, also great food (Perú) and people is very friendly as long as you stay carefull in big cities.

I have cheked lonely planet guide to southamerica, prices a descriptions are very accurate, you will get an idea.

OP here. I actually wouldn't mind going to a number of those yellow countries. Even some red ones I'd visit.
>> Anonymous
I suggest Mexico.
I travel quite often there.
Go to Mexico city, Gudualajara, Zacatecas, etc.

Only border states/cities actually have any real drug/cartel violence problems.

The Metropolitan areas are nearby places of significant cultural imporatance. YOur buck will go a lobg way compared to other countries. YOull be able to afford better lodgings, better food (although over there even the most simplest/cheapest food is the most filling/delicious), quite a few know english thanks to american culture being popular & these areas having a large number of mixed bloods ( Family from guadalajara, jalisco. Have french & other european blood). Also many areas have their own "colonies" of foreigners.

People are usually very friendly and helpful. SOme places do seem dirt poor & some of the poverty can be depressing but otherwise youll have fun. ive gone on three seperate trips to mexico this last year & will go maybe another 2-3 again this year as well. (Part-time job college student here so I can attest to the ability of even the most financially strained can enjoy the place)

Also if many cities are safe at night even though they might not seem so. As long as its busy or semi-busy area you can tell its safe. any lonely streets or areas you should stay away from

Try somewhere in southeast Asia... if you're up for a challenge, that is! Everything is a bargain, so you can live as a king and countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and so on have a very fascinating and different culture. From my experiences Malaysia would be a better bet, since their English skills is actually pretty decent.

I just came home from a spanish course in spain and two weeks of backpacking in Andalucia. It was absolutely cool. Go around Andalucia, the people are friendly, there's a lot to see and it isn't too expensive. The food's great too. And people are nice enough in the streets of Granada to be walking smoking pot while and will randomly offer you a puff. SPAIN, I TELL YOU. SPAIN! (but barcelona sucks, be careful)

In an effort to revive this awesome thread, here are my semi-detailed suggestions.

North and Central America: Panama. You can swim in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in a short distance. It's one of the lesser shitty Central American countries.

South America: Chile. Not a complete shithole, Antarctic cruises, you can travel throughout the entire country in a short period of time (esp. if you decide to go on an Antarctic cruise).

Sub-Saharan Africa: Malawi. Friendly people. Only bad thing is the food crisis and (since it's in the tropics) diseases. But one of my top choices for sub-Saharan Africa.

Greater Middle East: Egypt. If you enjoy historical sites, this is basically your first choice. I'd highly suggest this to break your 10-year vacation fast.

Europe: Russia. Because it's fucking Russia.

Asia: China. There are a shitload of big cities on their eastern seaboard, and a ton of historical sites and shit. Also, cheap electronics FOR THE MOTHERFUCKING WIN!

- Great for relaxation and letting yourself go

i recomend germany. visit hamburg it´s a gorgeous city, the people are chilled & the beer is awesome. the famous red light district is worth a peek either and way bigger than the one in amsterdam... where u can buy pot instead what rules... well, i won´t really recommend sweden. the chicks ain´t that pretty, stuff is quite expensive and prostitution is illegal.

Germany. It fucking rocks.

Pretty much anywhere is ok, but I personaly fell in love with Stuttgart, been there last year.

Othrwise try Austria. It's fucking gorgeous, and the people are nicer than in Germany. Actually they kind of resemble north eastern Italians (Furlans, iirc), maybe a little more organized. Nice mittel-european people, very friendly. And the girls are fucking hot.
