Hey, /trv/, first time here..

I'm thinking about getting the train to Edinburgh to see one of my closest friends, the train there will cost around £150 (GBP) From Kent :-)

The train rides (2/3 changes) will take around 8 hours, Any good ways to pass time on the train? Also, have you got any idea how i could get to Dalkeith cheaply from Edinburgh main station?

But I want to take the train, planes confuse me too much, and I want to see the scenery on the way

Seriously, go into London and catch a direct train from King's Cross. A standard (open) return ticket on Virgin trains is about £105 (less with weekend deals), £68 if you've got a young person's rail card (18-25).

Trains are nice, it takes about 4:30 hours... nice scenery on the way too!

Thanks - I've never dealt with Virgin's trains.. are they good?

Also, scenery is exactly what I'm looking for.

Hints on passing time?

An iPod and something heavy to read is how I pass time travelling.

Any good books to recommend? Ideally something fiction, and not for kiddies

I hardly ever read fiction so I can't help you there. Last time I travelled I read two history books.

I can recommend this if you're intersted in the subject. 200 or so pages, quite densely packed with info though so it's a slowish read.

Virgin trains are in my opinion, the best experience from a service and comfort point of view. National Express also do a good service from London as well (might also be slightly cheaper), but I prefer the Virgin route and experience.
