At the end of the year I want to go on a US holiday. Preferably a working holiday. What are some jobs I could do in the US to survive?

In Australia I can work at McDonald's 5 days a week and have enough money to pay rent on a small flat and own a car. From what I hear about the US minimum wage you can barely even afford your bus ticket to work on minimum wage. If I showed up with a work visa for 6 months, what could I do?

Don't care where I end up. I'd live in Boston, NY, Seattle, Nevada, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Tennessee. Point is I want to go there and I need a job when I get there. How can I do this without having to spend my "holiday" working 50 hours just to cover rent?

Get some coin before you go. Wouldn't that make more sense?

Well I plan to. I'd still want a job, though.

TN would probably be a good choice. We have a low cost of living, low taxes, and very easy to find work here. Not to mention Nashville kicks ass and has an awesome nightn life. As for work, they're plenty of things you can do if you're 18+. Surveying will fetch you atleast 10$ an hour. But how're your computer skills? If you got A+ certified, you could work at GeekSquad or something along the lines of that.
Just be sure you prepare yourself, and plan a head before you leave to go any where.

Also, stay the fuck away from Memphis. City needs to be nuked. Stick around Middle Tennessee, like Nashville and Murfressboro.

Places like NY, Boston and Seattle have very high cost of living, you probably wouldn't be well off living on minimum wage.

we also have a job crunch in the states for teens so most unskilled work is near impossible to find. You will finder it harder than last year to find a job.

Avoid Florida at all costs. Once you wind up here your only options are "grow old" and "die".
There is no escape.

Another thing you could do is waiting if you have the people skills. I'm a waiter/student and on a the weekends I make atleast 150 a night. And like 60-90 on the weekdays. It's fairly easy, and with an aussie accent, you'd get major tips.
>> Anonymous
Here is something a bit offbeat:
Why not try Key West? One of the previous posters said that Florida is where you grow old and die, but Key West is way, way different. It's like what would happen if SoHo and Haight-Ashbury got together and had a weird gay kid raised by Ernest Hemingway.

There is lots of seasonal labor, and it never really gets below "warm" there. Look into it. Plus, the city is just plain cool.

Work at the fucking Outback.

Srsly, you'd get over $9000 in tips every night.

I agree with him, you'd get the job with your accent alone and would get tips since your authentic and shit. Outback Steakhouse.

Sweet. Where can I find outback steakhouses?

If you want to have a cool working holiday, with the job waiting for you when you get here, try a park situation. There are two major options available to you, here; the theme park, and the national park. Either way, concessionaires hire ARMIES of people to help keep the place running, and the tourists fed. The upside is that getting the job is easy, you'll be an insider in a place that most people could only dream of living, and they tend to provide food and shelter for you, in some capacity, so you don't even have to worry about finding a place to stay, plus you're guaranteed to make some pretty cool friends. The downside is that these types of companies pay for shit, and treat their employees pretty poorly, since it's all about hiring by quantity, not quality. If you can stand the corporate condescension, and go to have fun, you will have a great time. One piece of advice: find a friend with a car. It makes a huge difference.

You may have to put off taking the trip until next spring/summer, though, depending on where you decide to go. Check out this website, it might be helpful:

Seriously. Even if it's gimmicky slang, use it. Try to look good, but not too good. If your handsome, try to get some semi-nerdy glasses or something. You want moms to think you're a cute kid who they could see their daughter dating on study abroad, not some foreign Lothario ought to rape our precious american women. Trust me, this will work miracles.

Are you sure this is a good idea? I mean here in the UK it seems like every employee of outback is Australian or Kiwi. Although i suppose there are less Aussies in the USA.
>> Anonymous
>>32033
no HB-1 visa =fail your idea. come here on a tourist visa, then get deported in 6 weeks because you jaywalked or dropped a cigarette butt on the ground in front of a cop, who ran your ID through some crazy computer shite. .

Supposition is correct. Aussies are few and far between.

>>33317

You are a retard. Or, Aussiefag needs to stay away from where you live because you have gestapo cops. I know illegals in N.J. that have been there for 15 years (Mexicans and some Irish)

I think Outback is a great idea, but I also think a waiter is your best bet as far as getting a job that requires little experience. Please, please, please try to plan before hand as much as you can (make contact with people, explain your situation, be sincere, etc)

>>32507

this actually is pretty good advice. like someone said earlier you can make pretty good money being a waiter in tips. and its true, we americans love australian accents, and you probably would get tipped extra for it. plus people will be in love with you and think you're awesome

We need Aussies in the porn business.
Look up Nasty Nate if you're ever in the L.A. area.

live in oakland and work in san francisco. transportation is about $6 a day, and minimum wage in SF is $8.75 (maybe $8.50). you could a cheap apartment in oakland for less than $400 a month.

so lets say that you work 40 hours a week at 10 bucks an hour (starting wage for retail jobs here), that's about $1400 a month after taxes, minus $120 for transportation, $400 for rent, and about $300 for food, and maybe $80 for other necessities. that leaves you with about $500 a month for entertainment and saving.

it can get even cheaper if you find a cheap apartment in the city, as that would either cut your monthly transportation by half or even completely remove it.

It's true. Work at Outback Steakhouse. You will be seen as legitimate rather than some 16 yr old teenager working there. Which =more tips

Also, American women are suckers for accents. You'd get pussy instantly. You don't even have to be good looking.

I don't think the OP has a death wish.

Seriously? Outback steakhouse? That place has got to be the biggest misrepresentation of Australia. NOTHING about it is Australian at all. It is true you could make money there, but be prepared to be appalled.

It's all about Portland, Oregon. Good minimum wage, plenty of jobs, good music, good parties, and more non-douchebags per capita than most cities.

Op's plan is flawed, lets see you get a green card for unskilled labor in the current climate.

Anon does not speak the truth. Portland was voted one of the best cities to live in in the U.S. It's also the most bike friendly city in the U.S. Cool people, great music scene, bar scene, good jobs, high employment rate. Also very beautiful, a local law requires all government buildings must spend a decent portion of their budget on "artwork" of some kind, (usually architecture.)
>> Anonymous
>>35274
Mandatory art, various "scenes", and bikes? This city sounds pretentious and terrible.

You can't get a job here.
You need a work permit,a nd then you need to somehow find a job when everyone living here can't even get one.
>> Anonymous
>>35279

True, that's why you need some specialized skill if you want a job.

Go to Las Vegas, Nevada. No matter how shitty the economy gets, Vegas does okay. I've lived here my whole life and never had to worry about not being able to find at least some kind of job. If you go to northern Nevada you'll just end up working on a farm, avoid it.
