Hey I have just turned 18 and I really want to know what America is like, is it as great as the movies and TV shows make out, with the Diners, waffles and tasty treats that we don't have here in the UK?

Isn't it pretty much exactly the same as the UK?

I would kind of agree with that. Except there are places in the US with very good weather/climate, and you can live by the beach, which gets you outside pretty easily (look at boobies).

I have cousins in London, and they're always really excited when they come here to visit. When they were younger, they'd always buy a bunch of boxes of Captain Crunch All Berries because they couldn't get it in the UK.
I guess it all depends on where you go. There are a lot of diners, waffles, and tasty treats, but to be honest, the grass is always greener, you know? I for one would LOVE to visit the UK! It seems like such an amazing place, but then again, TV and Movies.

>>45563

TV shows and movies are pretty much an accurate depiction of the United States, to a generalization. Of course not everyone here lives in the same way, but said movie and tv examples of Americans are considered the norm. Like has already been said, it really depends on where you go and the people you meet.

Yes, we have diners, waffles and lots of different eccentric borderline redundant and cheap treats. But I'm sure all countries have those to some extent.

>> Unspoken
PART 1-

On the outside it looks wonderful- jobs to be had, women to be wooed...

Except for the government that's making just about everything illegal-- like speaking against the government, for one.

The food is good, IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO GO. Every 10 feet there's either a McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Burger King, Wendys, or KFC. People actually have to take a long drive in most places nowadays to find a regular ol' grocery store. All the pre-prepared food at aforementioned fast food places are guaranteed to give you cancer-- if the grease doesn't give you a heart attack first.

in the UK you have to work hard to find a fast food restaurant-- in America you have to work hard to NOT find one.

As for the people, if you can get over the fact that half of the population here are essentially mindless rednecks waving flags and telling anyone who isn't to "get out of America."

As long as you wave a flag and go "America!! Yeah!" every time you see someone, you'll be fine. When in Rome.......

Also, heaven help you if you're gay or lesbian. More than half of America believes that those people are the scum of the earth. Ever read a history book and seen the Ku Klux Klan burn down black people's houses and kill them and burn crosses? Take out the burning of crosses and homes, and replace the black people with gay and lesbians.... now you got it. Gay and Lesbian couples get treated like shit here. So for God's sake... show them some respect. Lord knows they get so little of it here.

Gas is never less than 4 bucks a gallon. Take that into consideration if you want to live here for more than 10 minutes.
>> Unspoken
PART 2--

Onto the housing market-- Unless you're renting (which is expensive in all but the smallest growing neighborhoods), expect the house you buy to be the one you're going to stay in for damn near 20+ years.

To support this house, your (good) food, and your gadgets (which I will get into later), you're going to need a job. All I can say at this point is--

GOOD LUCK. you're gonna need it.

If you get a minimum wage job, (such as one at Wal-mart or McDonalds) you're going to have no choice but to stay in a crappy, 1-bedroom apartment until you get a better job. If you hit it big with some skills that'll net you a job that pays at least 15 bucks an hour or more, then maybe you'll be able to live comfortably by yourself. Remember, the cost of living goes up almost exponentially as you have kids and whatnot, so keep up the hard work if you get a girlfriend and decide to settle down.

Gadgets-- here's where the pessimism ends. If you got the money to buy them, your gadgets can totally make or break the fun in your life. We all have TV (and many have 2 or 3), and depending on how much you pay, you can get 100-10,000,000 channels. (Of course, if all you're going to do is live the american dream, just buy some potato chips, a nice couch, and turn the TV to football. Do this 8 hours a day 'till you die) (which won't be long if you keep that habit up.)
>> Unspoken
Americans have the 2nd widest selection of useless and useful gadgets in the world (the only one outranking us is Japan). If you watch a 30-minute TV show, you will see about 17-18 minutes of commercial, and 12-13 minutes of actual show, thus showcasing just how much useless crap we need you to buy. Everything from fattier (or less fatty) foods to eat while you watch TV to exercise machines to motivate you to get up off your lazy butt and move around and knock some of that weight off. (don't be fooled. they cost a fortune, and most people buy one to make themselves think they're getting healthier, but they never use it. If you want to get weight off, go and walk outside. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A QUICK WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT, SAVE FOR RIPPING YOUR GUTS OUT.)

Now, you're fit, you got a job, and you got a house, right? Now it's time to get a woman.

There's an almost endless list of ways one can get a woman, wether it be on the internet (slow as hell 99% of the time. We're 42nd in broadband penetration and speed in the world, right below the Vatican and the Czech republic), walking around and meeting girls (this sometimes works, ironically), and just going to public places and striking up a conversation.

Finding a hot girl is going to be hard. Remember when I said that fast food dominates? People eat what they can find, and if all they can find is stuff that'll make you balloon up.... Well, you get the idea. America is THE fattest nation in the world, bar none. Barely less than half of the people in the world (men, women, kids, adults, elderly) are overweight, and about 1 in 5 are morbidly obese. Seeing a special on a TV show about "this man has been eating mcdonalds since he was 12" and "this guy weighs 400 pounds" and "this little kid is a tub of lard because she wont stop eating" are VERY common nowadays. Once a week on the news there's a piece on American Obesity. and people look at it, nod their fat heads, and take another handful of potato chips.
>> Unspoken
PART 4--

Anyways, the horribleness doesn't end there. Many people, from the fat to the rail thin, are unhappy with themselves. The fat people have good reason, but beware of the girls who you think are hot because they look like supermodels... Watch them for a while to see if they really are happy with themselves. Many girls see themselves as overweight even though they're practically skeletons. It's WAY too easy to get into that mentality nowadays. Girls see these supermodels who weigh like 90 pounds, and cry at themselves because they weigh 120 or whatever. The media has ways of making even the most happy man in the world depressed about himself.

That being said, if you can find a girl who isn't a heifer, and more importantly, has a good self-esteem, you're golden. Keep her. Do whatever you can to keep her. (Of course, most women who are in this position know it, and become total bitches because they are a valued commodity, so beware of that.)

Now you have chosen either one or the other path. The real American dream, or the supposed american dream. (more on the real dream in a moment) The supposed one is fun in its own right, and goes like this-- you Bullshit through work each day, stop by the fast food store, buy some potato chips when you gas up, and go home and eat and watch TV every day. It's hella fun, sure, but it's not healthy. This brings us to healthcare-

If you don't have insurance, become a religious fanatic. Why? Because if you don't have insurance and you get sick, say goodbye to house and home. Medical expenses are higher now than in recorded history, especially for America. A trip to the doctor for a physical will cost about 250-400 bucks. (and living the supposed american dream means that the doctors office will be a common occurrence). So Pray To God that you never get sick unless you have insurance.
>> Unspoken
PART 5- FINAL

In fact, most hospitals in America won't look at you twice if you don't have insurance or the cash in hand. Insurance is expensive, yes (600 bucks a month), but it'll really help if you get sick. Truly.

This is probably the number 1 thing that discourages people from going to America. If you get sick, you're shit outta luck. The rest of the stuff you can deal with, as it's not that much different from the rest of the world.... but the fact that if you can't get a job with benefits (healthcare, dental, etc.) you're... well, running on your luck every day, and soon that luck will run out.

Now, let's say your job pays benefits. You've got a good income, a great girl, maybe a kid, and are living in a nice community in a fairly nice house. You have internet, TV, and some gadgets to play with. You have a nice car and don't need to worry each night before bed if you're gonna get sick and lose it all tomorrow. Your food is good and healthy and McDonalds is considered a special treat, not lunch. You take a walk with your girlfriend/wife/kids every day, and you're healthy and happy with little stress.

See that? THAT IS THE REAL AMERICAN DREAM. If you get that, work your ass off to keep it. You're one of the lucky few, the chosen elite. Don't rub it in other people's faces, just reflect and be thankful every day of your life. You will be taken care of, and you will be the happiest you've ever been in your life, guaranteed.

It's hard to find greasy spoons. I don't know of too many that really exist anymore. But if you're going to visit America, there's a lot to see. So much so that it's hard to really generalize.

Things change quite a bit depending on the region of the country you're in. Of course if you're staying in just big cities, then you may not notice it as much (unless you're going from New York to Seattle). There's a lot of different food available, and yes plenty of fast food.

In regards to fast food though, I think you need to consider it as more or less road food. We've got a huge highway system and it's widely used. Fast food is convenient for people who can't afford to stop for long and have to keep on going. Which is why you find clusters of restaurants near on/off ramps and much fewer restaurants in cities.
>> Anonymous
If your going to visit the us I recomend renting a car for a week or two. With the exchange rate like it is you should be a rich man, at least for a little while. Drive around one specific region, for example: the Pacific NW, New England, The Antebellum South, The American SW.

STAY OFF THE FUCKING INTERSTATE. The interstate is the same all over, you will find the same restaurants, truckers, and strip malls. Drive on state or county roads, they go through cool small towns, and have way better scenery. I think you get a way better feel for a place by visiting smaller towns and staying away from larger metropolises. Stop a lot along the way, ask people where to eat, or what to see. I get interesting responses when i ask people "im only going to be in town for one night probably ever, where should i eat?"

Mind you a lot of the food in small towns is crappy frozen food that they heat up in a microwave. But some of it is pretty damn good regional fare.

America is a very large, very diverse place. If you come with an open mind, and greet people with a smile and a hello, youll have a great time wherever you go.
>> Anonymous
You'll have the greatest selection of food than any other country due to the cultural melting.

America is really like any other developed country. You'll have your rich areas, your middle class, and your poor areas. Obviously, stay away from the poor areas because there is crime. You wouldn't have any problems walking down the street, but locking your door at night is a good thing.

Just like on TV, most Americans live in the suburbs. 70% or so live in houses(maybe less because of subprime). The TV does an ok job at generalizing everything, but you'll never find all of those traits in one place.
>> Anonymous
It's folly to generalize about any big country. The different regions are all, well, different.

Listen to this guy!

Also, I've noticed that people on the coasts tend to be less friendly than in, say the Midwest/Near South. It's wierd, since they're stereotypically more liberal, but I think it's the truth. They tend to want to stay more to themselves maybe and have less of a sense of community than some of the other places.

But yeah, stick to country roads. The Interstate is best if you're just trying to get from point A to point B. If you actually want to see the country, you've got to get off of it.

What America is like is a matter of perspective. Your experience may vary at any given time based on absolutely nothing. We have so many different cultures living together. Sometimes you encounter racial tension, other times people will treat you like their brother. Living here can be harsh, but people still find the will to help each other out. Open mindedness is of great importance. Life here is a test of one's tolerance of other people(s). For the most part, we're good people, but again that depends on who you're dealing with, and who they're dealing with.

OP,

Londoner here, and I'm emmigrating to Nebraska, US before the end of August. I did a fair bit of vacationing there before the decision, and, it varies alot via location. For me, where I'm moving to is ideal. Instead of stepping out of my house and in both directions are two previous murder scenes, I'm moving to a place where all the houses are detached, fairly well kept and quite a distance from each other.

There's 100,000 people living just within my immediate area here, and only ~10,000 max within the entire city where I'm moving to. Made friends there already, some of whom own coffee places I can go to, or other various places I can go, and the people are just... nicer. A friend of mine lives in Binghamton, NY, too. And it's a significantly different case there. If you're looking for a quiet life, places like the west are a fairly decent idea.

Don't go by the movies and TV shows. Seriously. Depending on where you are planning on going, if you have such high hopes, you're going to be very disappointed.

Here in Cali, we have a huge immigration problem. It's big in Texas too, but I don't live in Texas. Eh.

Anyway. Almost every single fast food job is taken by a Mexican and most of the time they don't know English. They wash cars, they garden, they're maids and roofers and so on and so on. So if you plan on coming here, I suggest you learn some Spanish.

Where I live, it's fairly normal. It's a little street with big houses were we ever to hope to buy, we'd have to win the lottery. We'll be moved out of here in less than three years. Probably to a condo to rent for the rest of our lives. Welcome to America.

There are few real Diners here anymore. There's Denny's... http://www.dennys.com/en/
The two I've been to, they're very nice at. The waitresses have had very good manners (and nice jugs). One thing you must know about when you get here is this beautiful place called Hooters...

These are the normal waitresses -> http://gcaa.collegiategolf.com/upload_images/gcaa/2004_match_play/hooters.jpg

I'm not kidding.

A common thing in California is the procurement of perfectly good land, and turning it into what my mom likes to call "house seeds". Rows of houses packed together that have no backyards and look. exactly. the. same. Very stimulating indeed.

The beaches are normal, I guess. We have volleyball and piers and kite flying. Plus really hot babes. I'm not kidding.

This is the Santa Monica Pier -> http://www.visitingdc.com/images/santa-monica-pier-address.jpg

This is Malibu, California. You have to be a movie star to live here. Either that, or very rich or very hot and thus attracting a very rich man.

There are all kinds of crowds here for teenagers (and beyond). There are goths (sometimes hardcore, but I don't see many with pale faces). Punkers with those ass flaps with band names on them. Pot is pretty prevalent and a lot of kids around here don't care much for their futures. But a lot of them do.

The best schools here are UCLA and USC. They hate each other. Their cheerleaders are hot -> http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2007/writers/austin_murphy/01/01/song.girls.qa/p1_usc.song.girls.jpg

Okay, I'm bored now. But keep in mind, this is just my perspective from a city person's point of view and I'm from California. A New Yorker would have very different to say. They'd probably mention their cat-sized rats and such.

California is a HUEG place. We have a mountain range and a desert and valleys and so on and so on. There are places of real country. Google "Big Bear" "SaddleBack Mountain" uh... there's more shit here. But my brain just farted.

Google is your friend.

Also, if you have any questions, ask 'em. I'll check back with this later.

I've just spent a month on holiday in the bay area. It was awesome. Saw little of said mexicans, other than small groups in the morning waiting to be picked up for work.

I really liked the sierra's, we went there for like 4 or 5 days, for some horseback riding / camping in the mountains. Also, we spent every night firing all sorts of guns. (Eurofag here; we don't get to shoot guns, so..:-)

>>Also, I've noticed that people on the coasts tend to be less friendly than in, say the Midwest/Near South. It's wierd, since they're stereotypically more liberal, but I think it's the truth. They tend to want to stay more to themselves maybe and have less of a sense of community than some of the other places.

If I was still living in California I'd agree.

But I'm up here in Washington, near Seattle, which I'd say is coastal, and they're profoundly more friendly here than in Cali.

Redmond is probably full of assholes

USA is a big place. You can't compare the Orkney Islands with London, nor can you compare LA with rural Florida. Very different places. We have great diners, high end places, too. Come visit us. And you don't HAVE to learn Spanish unless you want to live in Miami. There are no Mexicans in Miami, just the cubans that floated in.

In regards to Mr.
NO INTERSTATE
NO FAST FOOD
AMISH ONLY
FINAL DESTINATION
there, take a good look at this image. This black and white shield symbol designates US Routes. They were around before the interstates, and are SO MUCH BETTER unless you absolutely have to keep a tight schedule. This is doubly true in New England, where the local US Routes are paved, slightly widened versions of the roads that have existed since the colonial era, and the Interstates just loop around (or go under, in Boston's case) all of that shit.

A bunch of bullshit if you ask me. I've got no school spirit nor have I ever had any. I just could care less about that stuff. Then again, I don't get riled up by much to begin with.

I can't deny it though, at the few football (American Football of course) games I've been to, I couldn't help but get into it.

Shove up your ass. The Midwest is by and large friendlier than the coasts. That conservative collectivism vs. the liberal indiviudalism means that you get a greater sense of community and welcome in the Midwest and the middle of the country than you would on the coasts where everyone just cares about themselves and wants to be left alone.

And to add, California is a shitty state. There's no real reason to go there. People from California are the most self-obsessed assholes in the US. They love the fact that they're from California.

Pride in one's school sports teams.

A lot like how you eurofags are crazy about your soccer teams.

>>46130

I think it goes beyond sports teams, but they're certainly the focal point. Football is typically the primary sport with Basketball at second. The rest, well they don't really matter because they don't make the school money.

As an Arizonan, I can attest that Californians are nothing but headaches. Flashy Trashy isn't a stereotype, it's a state of mind, and every goddamned Californian with a tiny little dog in their purse and a gigantic pimped out Escalade will try to run you off the road if you call them out for it. Bunch of mean spirited fucks, our Mexican community even hates them.

Come to tha dirty South. We have chicken and waffles, sausage gravy and all the firearms you can carry. Greasy spoon diners are abundant if you get your ass out of cities you've ever heard of and into small towns. We can't help you much with the hot women though. With obesity rates topping 30%, if she's not 250 pounds, she's probably under age, or under 4 feet tall.

Gas however is damned sure not four dollars a gallon yet. I saw 3.68 last night.

Former Scottsdale, AZfag here. I agree with you with the exception of the San Francisco Bay area. The people there represent the geographic location: halfway between LA and Seattle. The Californian impulses exist, but they're more directed towards fulfilling all the stereotypes that make us blue-staters look bad.

Try Arizona, the winters are great and the gun laws are just as lax as the South. Plus Phoenix is a halfway decent cit-nevermind about Phoenix. Anywhere but Phoenix.
