I've got 2 weeks to kill in Japan. Originally I had planned on staying in Osaka for a couple of days before heading up to Tokyo for the remainder, but now I'm thinking that perhaps I should spend some time in other parts of the country as well.

Any suggestions? (I love places where there's life and cityscapes seeing as I come from such a boring town.)

Well, if it's life and cityscapes you want, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya. If it's "real Japan" you want, check out Toyama, home of delicious water, one of the best three seated Buddhas in the country (better than Kamakura's, tbh) and one of the three holiest mountains in the country (along with Fuji and Hakusan).

(Not OP here.) Toyama doesn't appear on my itinerary so far, but I would have the possibility to stay there for two hours (21-23) waiting for a connecting train.
Is there anything interesting to do there after 9 pm, which doesn't take longer than two hours? If not, I will just take a later train with far less wait.

people only ever come to toyama because the tokaido shinkansen wasn't convenient :(

If you'd be stuck in Toyama City for those two hours, there's bars and restaurants near the station. There's a really good Thai restaurant (Sawasdee) about a 3 minute walk south. In the same building as the thai restaurant, depending on the night, you could hit up Club Mairo, but, 9 is pretty early, so it wouldn't be so bumping.

Yes, that applies in my case as well.
It's a monday night, so I doubt there will be much action. What about Chokei-ji? LP says it's open 24h a day. Good/no good, far from station?

Take a trip to Shikoku. JR Shikoku's Sunrise Eexpress connects Tokyo and Takamatsu.

Thirded. This board has actually inspired me to try and make more monies so I can satiate my wanderlust.

Pardon me, that's JR Central and West's Sunrise Izumo/Sunrise Seto. Also goes to Matsuyama and Kochi depending on train.

Kansai region for culture brotha (you are a short train ride between kyoto, nara, kobe, and osaka) And of course Tokyo for the modern side of Japan.

Interestingly, I got a good impression of how the Japanese truly live by heading to Fukuoka on Kyushu, despite it's detachment from the mail land. You can get there by train still.

man, choke-ji is awesome, but you can't get there from the station on foot. you'd defo have to take the bus. it's like, right smack between toyama station and kureha station, iirc.
