Hey, I'm also planning to go to India after the 20th of April. Going on a year long backpacking trip through Asia. Been to Nepal before and parents have been to India before.
Yes, a great part of India is poor and people will ask you for money/want to sell things, often. Luckily though, it's a very friendly country and you'll never be actually harassed just be nice and say no. You'll get used to it eventually. I don't know how long you'll be staying and where you're planning on going but ignore the malaria medication. If you're going longer than 2 weeks you have to take way too much with you, which takes waaaaay too much space, not to mention they can give you side effects. Get a Mosquito net that's impregnated with deltamethrin or permethrin, will cost you (for a single person) somewhere between 25 and 50 dollar. That's enough to keep you safe. That and wearing long sleeves (certainly at night). If you're only staying in large cities you can even forget that net. No nasty bugs in the big city.
Last, Goa. Google some information about the province of Goa and you'll understand why a lot of western folk stay there during the winter.
Hope that's something. (Not>>17502btw)
