I've lived in Auckland, New Zealand all my life. I've travelled a bit so I could contrast to other countries. Question away

how hard is it to gain citizenship?
how do strangers treat each other on the streets?
how expensive are things there? e.g. housing, food, gas/transportation
is it crowded there at all, or is the population at a nice equilibrium of enough people and enough personal space?
how far away are the outdoors from auckland, like places to hike, mountains to ski, the beach, or anything else i might not know about?
and is the outdoors a big deal over there? like do people usually spend their free time outside, or inside watching tv/on the computer?
how strict is the law? and what is the government like?
how difficult would it be to get a job there?

this is all relative to the U.S. if you could contrast your answers with what you saw while visiting here

how long of a trip is it from australia to NZ? (i'm assuming by boat)
anything you might think is notable to point in terms of differences between living in NZ and living in australia?

Visit South Auckland - it's a wonderful place, bro. Make sure you rent a BMW and wear your most expensive threads (cologne wouldn't go amiss as well).

>Historically the name South Auckland has had negative connotations with outsiders, being associated with deprivation, crime and violence.

Nah, bro, it's all good!
PROTIP: If you're thirsty in South Auckland, just rock on up to the local Mongrel Mob headquarters and have a few beers with the boys and it'll all be sweet.

3 hour flight between aus and NZ. Only a fool would go by boat

I roadtripped around the north island a few years back. Wellington, Auckland, Rotorua, Bay of Islands, Napier, etc.

It's not bad, particularly if you like outdoorsy stuff and extreme sports, in which case you can have a hell of a time. Outside of that, I'm not sure what else you could do. High cost of living. Auckland is the only city that feels at all crowded.

>how hard is it to gain citizenship?
It depends on what your skills are/family living here/previous jobs/coming for employment I think.

>how do strangers treat each other on the streets?
Strangers are generally treated nice during daytime. Many of the Islander population might try to intimidate you but many do it to look tough infront of their mates. I'd stay out of South Auckland if I didn't know anyone their though. One of my best friends lives there though and when I'm with him I'm treated with respect by people on the street, even though I'm a skinny white guy. North Shore, Auckland should be fine by yourself, at night don't hang around really if your not with someone else.
>how expensive are things there?
Auckland is quite expensive to live in, although it is manageable.

>is it crowded there at all, or is the population at a nice equilibrium of enough people and enough personal space?
New Zealand isn't crowded at all. I've been to China and Singapore though so when returning to New Zealand the streets look empty. The only busy-ish street in Auckland is Queens Street during the day.

>how far away are the outdoors from auckland, like places to hike, mountains to ski, the beach, or anything else i might not know about?
There are beached all around the Auckland area, although they aren't the best. You can travel for an hour down to Mount Maunganui/Coromandel region. There's an indoor ski-slope which is 20 minutes from the CBD. If you want to go on an actual mountain there is Mt. Ruapehu within a 2-3 hour drive. It takes around 1-1 and a half hours to travel from the East Coast of Auckland to the West Coast. The Waitakere Ranges are a nice place to hike, or you can take a 2-3 hour drive down South to the Taupo region and hike the mountains there. (Tongariro Crossing is good)
>how strict is the law?
The law is quite strict, although if you don't look suspicious then police are unlikely to randomly question you. The weed is nice and quite easy to come by. Around 10% of our population smokes it I think.

>what is the government like?
We elected in a new Prime Minister a couple of days after the American elections so yet to see how this party goes. The party elected in was the National Party.
http://www.politicalcompass.org/nz2008 shows where they stand. (The previous party was the Labour Party)
>how difficult would it be to get a job there?
Shouldn't be too difficult if you have higher level education and previous work experience.

Haven't been to America unfortunately so can't really contrast it. If I made New Zealand sound dangerous in my answers, it really isn't compared to what we here about America.
>how long of a trip is it from australia to NZ? (i'm assuming by boat)
It's a 3 hour flight from New Zealand to Australia. No one takes a boat as it's quite a distance.
>anything you might think is notable to point in terms of differences between living in NZ and living in australia?
I've been to Sydney, Australia so I'll try answer. New Zealand has a much more relaxed feel to it. It's also more culturally diverse than from what I saw. Weather in New Zealand isn't as extreme as Australian weather.
