They last as long as you want. You could take a plane and have them done in 6 hours. Or you take a year, stopping at every village along the way. It depends how much money you have, and how immersed you are prepared to be.
I have done trans-America and Canada in 3 months (road trip!), as well as the Trans-Siberian to beijing, followed by getting to Singapore. Trans-Siberian and Moscow/Petersburg was one month, and mooching round Asia for 3 months. I did the big cities, as well as some smaller ones. If you stick to the big cities, you may be safer (in terms of if something went wrong, you'll be able to find English speaking help), but you may be bored quicker, as they all become alike.
My recomendation for first time travellers is to do East Europe - its safe and its cheap. Going to Asia (not Japan, /jp/fags) is cheaper, but less security. Definately worth doing, but it may not be for everyone!
