fellow britfag reporting in.
I have a US gf so try to spend must of my time in the US or traveling in-between.
Visa: You dont need one. Being from the UK makes you eligible for the Visa Waiver Scheme, which lets you enter without a visa for 3 months per visit. You can only stay for three months at a time. Crossing the border into mexico or canada for a couple days and coming back into the US doesn't count as leaving the US though and they wont give you another 3 months, the border dudes dont like it.
Basically they want to make sure you're not trying to live in the US undetected, so need to see that you haven't "abandoned" your life in the UK. This means breaks in-between visits, like months. If you ever get questioned, say that you still own a home in the UK and have a job there too, this makes them less suspicious that you're going to enter and never leave. Make up some shit about being able to work from anywhere there's an internet connection, but DONT say you're a reporter in any way.
Tickets: You HAVE to have proof of a return ticket to the UK or they wont let you leave the UK to start with.
