I'm doing a paper on Mexican corruption within the police force and gov't. I wanted some personal opinions for native residents and tourists. What better place than the travel board.

If you've ever been in Mexico have you been asked to give a bribe or given a bribe out of tradition? Anything else happen to you?

I've been to Mexico. Specifically, a resort in Cancun. No, I haven't been asked to give bribes. Nothing else happened to me aside from fun in the sun.

I grew up in Mexico, and yes, pretty much everyone is a corrupt bastard. It's every man for himself, dog eats dog, etc.

That unless you have a relative in the goverment, then you're set for life.

Example: my godfather (lol) was in charge of a municipal goverment office, one of my first jobs back when i was still in prep school was designing and printing official papers for him. Just give you an idea, I could have printed out a master and the photocopy it for about 50 cents a copy (mexican currency) but he told me to charge wathever the fuck i wanted, so i charged about 5 pesos per copy.

It was a good summer, bought my first cell phone lol

about bribes, well i never had to pay for one myself, but there was this time my dad decided it was a smart idea to dump our garbage in a landfill where you were only supposed to dump construction waste.

The cops saw us, the ticket for doing that was going to be about 2000 pesos, but he gave them (3 cops) a 6 pack of beer to each one and everyone lived happily ever after.

I actually prefer the corruption Mexico has than the one in the U.S. Mexico's corruption is more open and visible, as opposed to the U.S.'s.

Google:
-the deaths of political rivals

-the way Mexico encourages Mexicans to immigrate to the US illegally, in violation of our national sovereignty, to get money from the US and send it back to Mexico (illegals doing just that is Mexico's #2 source of revenue

-Mexico is an oil-producing nation that is much richer than it depicts itself to be, but it's very fascist where the rich get richer and the poor are told to get out, go to America, and send money back. The ruling elite protect each other, and the government protects them.

-Mexican hypocracy and it's cruel treatment of illegals on Mexican soil while demanding all open access to the US for Mexican illegals

Regarding corruption, bear in mind that it depends who's the person getting busted, and what for. A citizen that runs a red light, after haggling for a while might get to go after giving about 100-400 pesos; take into account the type of car you have (better car, better bribe) and what you were doing.

Also depends where you were, in the capital you might get stopped at a few times for the same thing, at which point it would be just easier to pay the fine, which are not that high anyways(compared to more developed countries).

On higher levels of corruption check into FOBAPROA (a type of financial rescue); also, there's a "tradition" where the outgoing president takes some souvenirs with him, most of the time a few million dollars, more famously done by Carlos Salinas, who also has ties with organized crime, his brother is in jail and another one was found dead in a car; plus his victory in the elections is widely disputed.

Regarding the police, there have been several situation where half the police is fired because of crackdowns on corruption, or they have been stripped of their guns for periods of time; also near recently the military and other agencies have started to patrol the city, apart from the police. It's not uncommon to see pick ups full of masked officers with assault rifles or a convoy of Humvees passing through.

That's all I can think for now (not for lack of more, just lack of sleep), hope it helps. I'm a Mexican citizen by the way.

Pic related to my city.

Just Mexico's way of taking a fraction back from what NAFTA screwed out of them.

That's expectable from a person who doesn't understand what capitalism is.

Monetarily, maybe. I've traveled all over Mexico, though. The money is all in certain places. The tourist traps and Mexico City are going to be relatively wealthy. Everywhere else is just.. big time poverty.
