Hello

I am going to be living/studying in Japan for the best part of a year beginning september 1st. Specifically I will be in Nagoya, I was wondering if anyone knew and interesting things about Nagoya, places to go, calendar events, good bars etc.

I studied in Sendai for a year. If you're part of a foreign exchange program, there's bound to be other foreigners with you. Go explore with them. Hell, you might even run into vet foreigners that have been living there before you. They'll know.

Aside from that, look up festivals. Sadly, Nagoya is one of the few big cities that I didn't visit. But from the other cities that I've visited, there's usually a (few) night-life district lined with all sorts of bars, restaurants, shops, and seedy places.

Nagoya is a big city and thus has all the shopping/entertainment you'd expect in a big Japanese city. However, it's not very popular with tourist (foreign and Japanese) because it really doesn't have much interesting culturally. It is neither the metropolis that Tokyo is nor the culturally rich and unique Kansai area like Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe. Making a large generalization, this has made some Nogoya people bitter saying things like, "you know Nogoya is the real center of Japan, blah blah." In other words, watch out for the bad attitudes of many of the locals.

TL;DR not as good as Kansai or Tokyo but you should still have a good time.
