I went to Montreal and spoke nothing but English the entire time. Sure, I felt left out of the 'cool French kids' club, but no one gave me sub-par service along the way. I've found Canadians (Quebecois included) to be very friendly, open, and pragmatic if you approach them in the same manner.
I would agree with the advice that you not attempt to converse in French unless you can really back it up. Once you open the floodgates, there's no turning back. Though if you get into a conversation in English, it's very easy to throw in a few French words or expressions if you know them.
