What does /trv/ think of Scotland?
>> Anonymous
All scottish people I've spoken with have been totally awesome and nice people. Don't know much about the country though. I think Scotland is going through some rapid economical growth or something nowadays? Also bagpipes and Loch Ness. And kilts.

All in all my impression of Scotland is that it's an interesting country I'd love to visit.

Every Scot I've met has been awesome. Bagpipes sound beautiful to me for some reason. Kilts are manly.

Scotland is pretty awesome.

I'm half Scottish with a lot of family up there, and it's pretty awesome. The best thing is that everybody pisses Irn Bru. The bad thing is how much they hate the English.

as a scot i would have to agree. its really retarded sometimes. also in Glasgow you get sectarian shite from people who think they are in 1960s Northern Ireland. shitsux
>> Anonymous
England never did anything to Scotland, why do they hate them so much?
>> Anonymous
>>19356
many Scots are still butthurt about the wars of independence and the whole act of union thing which created the United Kingdom.
>> Anonymous
>>19357
Yeah because that whole superpower thing was terrible for the UK, amirite. Wouldn't Scotland be worse off without England? England is the country that brings in all the money.
>> Anonymous
>>19259
you are not a country HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>> Anonymous
Nice job voting in the faggot nats for your stupid parliament.
>> Anonymous

The issue of independence mostly.
But then being part of the UK does have considerable benefits. England paying taxes towards Scotland's free higher education, for example.

>>19506
lol wut? that's bullshit to the English. The Scots would be mad to give that up.
>> Anonymous
Don't forget that they're all genetically identical on those stupid little islands. The reason they all hate each other is stupidity, nothing more.

No it's a NATIONALITY dumbo, not a country. The word country implies sovereignty.

Scotland, England, Wales, and even Northern Ireland are countries. You are doing it wrong.

Also there is NO "Scottish" or "English" nationality anymore, and there hasn't been for a long time. They are both "British".

Actually I think Wales is referred to as a Principality, my mistake. But they are all constituent countries of the UK. The Netherlands has this too with its Kingdom.

So it's like Aruba, which is a country within the kingdom of The Netherlands?

Yes

Scotland's economy is hardly booming, it lags behind England. You must be talking about Ireland which has went from one of the most backwards European countries to one of the richest (thanks to very low business tax).

This Anon is right, though as a Scot I hate being mistaken for the inferior Irish. They are not British other than the Northern Irish Protestants who are mainly descendants from Scotland. The theory that Scots, Welsh and Irish are a Celtic "race" and English are Germanic is a myth.

As for politics, Scots have it very good being part of the UK. We are subsidised by England and have been overrepresented in UK politics for hundreds of years. The SNP are simply the English hating party. They are not even real nationalists, they are left wingers and want us to become an insignificant pawn in the EU. They are even pro-multiculturalism and support third world immigration.

Retarded scot is retarded.

Celtic nor germanic are "races", but ethno-linguistic groups. Variations of the celtic language was spoken in all of the regions you mention. Infact, modern scots are descended from an irish people called gaels.

On the other hand, germanic culture and language became dominant in England after the 5th century anglo-saxon "invasion".

Learn2read. I didn't say they were a "race" I was calling bullshit on the people who say they are.

And the majority of all British people descend from the Basques so you fail.

And again you confuse genetics and linguistics.

I am a Welsh speaker who has lived there for most of his life and I hate the path of nationalism being taken in the various UK countries.

lolwut?
The Basques' genetic origins are unknown and they are not related to any other European group. Most British people descend from the Normans, not the Basques.

>By far the majority of male gene types in the British Isles derive from Iberia (modern Spain and Portugal), ranging from a low of 59% in Fakenham, Norfolk to highs of 96% in Llangefni, north Wales and 93% Castlerea, Ireland. On average only 30% of gene types in England derive from north-west Europe. Even without dating the earlier waves of north-west European immigration, this invalidates the Anglo-Saxon wipeout theory... ...75-95% of British and Irish (genetic) matches derive from Iberia...Ireland, coastal Wales, and central and west-coast Scotland are almost entirely made up from Iberian founders, while the rest of the non-English parts of the Britain and Ireland have similarly high rates. England has rather lower rates of Iberian types with marked heterogeneity, but no English sample has less than 58% of Iberian samples...

While the gene mapping approach to prehistoric human migration is very interesting, people should keep in mind the science is in its infancy and the gene pool in general and the migrations themselves are still poorly understood. I would expect whatever is being published now to undergo a lot of reinterpretation later on, like how Carbon-14 dating underwent recalibration, or dinosaur skeletal models had to be constantly changed with new information coming to light.

tl;dr: Oppenheimer's work, though very interesting, has yet to be backed up or corroborated by the general field.

Also, calling the British descendants of the Basques sort of implies the Basques have not had a recent genetic history of their own. Like with evolution, you should say the Brits and Basques seem to share a common ancestry.
>> Anonymous
>>19588
So should we hang on to musings and theories from hundreds of years ago or go with the DNA evidence? Oppenheimer's theory is not infallible but it seems to be the best we have yet.
>> Anonymous
>>19602
Well yes, but tread lightly. Oppenheimer has gone a little too far before. Such as arguing that Australasians founded all the major civilizations of prehistory after Sundaland flooded.
