Backpacking Anonymous
What's the longest amount of time Anon has been on the road or traveling for? I've spent 2 months traveling through South America, and wish I was still there...

Inb4 transients, homeless people.

Not OP here but what kind of Backpack would you recommend?

>>38021
Backpack can be anything you really want it to be, but I just have the requirement that it has broad, nicely cushioned straps. You will need it for long hikes/treks. A waist belt/strap might also be needed depending on how large it is or how much you stuff into it.

OP here:
What kind of backpacking would you like to do?
Urban- smaller, daypack kind of backpack works well, plus you won't stand out as much as you normally would.
Mountains- external frame so you can strap on (that's what she said) sleeping bag, pad, pots.
Combination- mid-sized internal frame

A large backpack can be stored at your hostel, and then you can use a collapsible day pack during the day. Girls could have the option of a purse.

i like internal frame packs when on the move (rei's stuff is good quality and cheaper than brand names; i have a new star). waist belts and frames are essential if you'll be walking more than a mile.

when you'r ejust out day-tripping or sightseeing, then a fanny pack or a small backpack (like you'd use for school) is much more appropriate.

but it really depends on how you'll be traveling, and what you're comfortable with.

Not to long, but Monday I am leaving for two months.

Vegas -> San Francisco, then going to though-hike the Oregon coast.

If I enjoy this trip I plan on buying a van and traveling around the country for 6 months during the off season of my job (November - April)

OP here
Agreed, pic is from the same trip. Something about the food strike or something. I actually enjoyed BA and all of Argentina, plus everything was super cheap, even for the struggling US dollar.

I spent almost 6 months just travelling. 2 months in the Middle East (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia & Yemen), 2 in Central Asia (Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Pakistan) then a month in Europe (Czech, Holland and Germany) on my way back to the UK.

The best part of it all was the freedom of it. Considering it all just started off as a 2 week trip to Turkey!

I spent 6 months traveling five years ago when i was 12. 4 months in Europe then 2 months in the USA from east coast to west coast in a shitty SAAB. Don't ever buy a SAAB.

How were your travels in the middle east? care to elaborate?
>> Anonymous
>>38466

The Middle East was awesome. Each country is a melting pot of different cultures. Very, very hospitable too. I rarely went to any restaurants becuase I kept getting invited to eat with peoples families. Everyone has a cousin or brother who can do something useful for you (cheap hotel, taxi, boat, works at a zoo so you get free entry etc. etc.)

So they didn't consider you to be as evil as Americans? As an Americunt I'd be afraid to backpack through the middle east.

As a blonde haired, blue eyed American, I think traveling through the middle east would be a lot of fun, if not a little dangerous.
Before traveling to a certain destination, I always hear from friends and other travelers awful horror stories. Yet, these 'horrors' never come to be, and I find more friendlies than adversaries.
>>38494
Did you fit in well during your visit to the middle east? (speak language, body appearance?)

I spent part of the time travelling with an American friend and he never had any problems. The people are more curious than anything else. They just want to know his views on this and that and drag you into boring political conversations.
What I found funny was that quite a lot of people expected him to have had trouble, like by asking him how's been treated in other areas, but no-one ever treated him bad.

so you guys just take an assload of $$$ with you? how do you shower/wash clothes/etc?
>> Anonymous
>>39556
obviously having lots of money helps, but you will notice that the people who have spent extended periods of time backpacking visited relatively cheap countries, at least for most of the trip

>>39474
some countries have a limit on how many visas you can get in a 12/24 month period, and some require you to get the visa from your fixed address. im not sure about india

i wanna go backpacking, but my normal life is bloody boring that i'm afraid i'm going to be depressed for months after coming back home

you can usually find a laundry service somewhere, somewhow, but even then you can just buy new clothes if you're backpacking in cheap countries
