Hey /trv/ first time poster here

Me and 2 friends have decided we are going to take a trip across Europe from Early June 2011 through Mid August 2011 (After we graduate).

What places whould we go see? We've already decided, London, Rome/Vatican City (We are all Catholic), Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam. Also thinking about St.Petersburg and Moscow What other places should we go see?

We want to stay in hostels and cook our own food.
Try to visit 23 different places (3 days each) or have a total of 69-70 days

How much should we expect to spend?
I was thinking 50-60 Euros a day not including getting there and train tickets.(Too Much too little?)

Do we need anything besides money, backpack (with stuff we're taking) and Passport?

How old are you all and where are you coming from (airport flying out of)? How many of you are there?

Your daily budget sounds ok if you're just planning on doing regular backpacker stuff, especially as cooking for yourself will save money.

You are going at the most expensive time of the year though, during the school holidays, but at least you're looking into it nice and early.

Only start looking at transport options once you've got a set list of places to visit. Rail Europe passes can be good value if you make the most of them, but sometimes coaches can save you a lot of money.

Theres 3 of us, flying out of Cleveland Hopkins(Mostlikely then to JFK then to whereever)

OK, so it's probably going to be cheapest to go from JFK to London, then do some kind of circuit and back to London (it's a lot cheaper to get return flights than two singles).

One thing you might want to look into is one of the 'Autodrive' schemes that the French car makers offer. You get a brand new car for hire for a very good rate. My friends got a 7-seater MPV for under $1800 all in for a month. You can drive it to almost any European country for unlimited miles, they do it because they can then sell the car on having skipped the taxes, saving maybe 20%. Split between 3 of you it might work out quite cheap and give you lots of freedom.

Well it depends on what you want to do during that trip... Are you looking to get wasted and go clubbing? Are you interested in architecture? History?

We are not that into partying, we'll only do it in Amsterdam mainly and maybe one or two other times. But we are interested in the sight seeing and history mostly. I can go clubbing and get wasted here in America.

Barcelona is a lovely city. If you're not into clubbing and/or not used to the different time schedule (get up in the afternoon, go to bed in the morning) you might find it a bit loud at night, but it's a beautiful city even during the day time

Venice is nice if you can find somewhere cheap to stay (more likely outside of Venice is cheaper, even with travel costs), and is worth visiting. It has about enough to do in 3 days, even if you don't include just sitting around and enjoying the place

Budapest is also a brilliant city worth visiting. The people there are really quite friendly and food is dirt cheap. When me and my friends had a similar trip recently Budapest was my favourite city. If you do go though, be prepared for extreme heat and a different currency than Euros

Finally, I'd say Copenhagen is worth a visit. It's got that sort of traditional medieval/fairytale city feel about it, lots of spires and cobblestones and the like around, so if you want to see that sort of thing it's quite nice (even for someone coming from York it felt very old European). Copenhagen has ridiculous prices though, especially when trying to find somewhere to stay
