Envy
I`ve been in Japan about seven months now, posting from Sapporo on my way hitch-hicking around Japan. From my experience only a very select few people treat you different because you`re a gaijin, namely the police and salary men over the age of 50. No one else gives a shit, infact the Japanese love gaijin. They especially like you if you at least try to speak the language and will proclaim you an expert no matter how much you fuck up.
You will also be slightly more attractive to the opposite sex than you would be in your home country. And yeah, 4chan knows nothing about real Japanese women. At all. Not that I`m praising them much, but fucking hell, they do know how to dress well, excluding the ganguro.
Working in Japan, especially in an office, is probably a fuck load different, expect a return to highschool politics, but I`m assured by many Japanese that the salary man, gaijin hating, work loving era of Japan is fading. The idea that the Japanese love their work is supposedly a myth.
What kind of look you get depends on where you go. In any major city no one will look at you once, they`ve seen gaijin before, not interested. Anywhere else you will get lookers, especially if you`re hitch-hicking, but you`ll get used it quickly.
Generally I`ve found that the Japanese look extremely reserved and conservative but if you can get them to open up they become extremely friendly and out spoken. Alcohol is a good way to get things flowing.
