I went there last weekend as part of the armys welfare activities (Yes, the army organised a trip for soldiers to get drunk and see culture in a foreign nation).
Probably one of the best weekends ive ever had, the clubs were amazing, and vodka is not only cheap, but extremely good. Thats why you have to be careful with russian vodka, its so good you dont really think about how much you are actually drinking. As for culture, there were several very good museum, unfortunately they did only have russian text, so a guide is essential, the monuments to the fallen in world war 2 were absolutely breath-taking, and it was fascinating to see the city. There was only one wooden building in the whole city, other than that there were only blocks, each either 5 or 9 stories tall. This was because in soviet russia you had to have one elevator in building taller than 5 stories, and two elevators in buildings with 10 or more. The eating as absolutely fantastic, if you choose to go to a mcdonalds when youre in russia then fine, be an idiot. Because eating well is incredibly cheap and good restaurants are easy to find.
Foreginers should never EVER take a taxi or move out on their own, some guys from the company got beaten up and robbed. If approached by strangers while out partying you should only shrug and say "English" and "Njet", and walk away, the criminals can tell a foreigner from a mile away, and know they have money, but they cant have any power over you if they cant communicate. The reason the guys from my company got robbed was because one of them had grown up in russia and started talking with some shady characters, in addition, they were too drunk.
But russia is awesome, and very cheap, its a country steadily climbing the ladder, and they are also good at preserving their own history. If you can, visit russia.
