alright /trv/, i'm sick of the US and i want to jump ship before this country tanks. i was thinking of moving to europe, but i took a trip to switzerland and germany and i realized just how much people hate americans. so my first question is, would europe be a bad choice due to the fact i am american? or would i be able to blend in somewhat?

because of this ive started looking at other countries, first being japan. i know, weeaboo, blah blah blah, but i took japanese in high school so i would have an easier time getting assimilated, but i would still stick out like a sore thumb. i've heard many mixed reviews of how the japanese feel about americans, so is that any reason to choose japan over europe?

the last place i've considered moving to is new zealand. i love how it is separated from the rest of the bullcrap, and australia isn't far away. but the big question is, how do they feel about americans?

i will probably be doing a study abroad sometime next year, and i would like to "taste" a different country before deciding to move there.

so, tl;dr, should i move to a european country, japan, or new zealand?
>> Anonymous
Europeans don't necessarily hate Americans, only if they're dumb. Most of them just hate American politics and want to debate with you a lot. If you ran into any actual anti-american fagheads, then it's bad luck, sorry to hear that.. but most of the sentiments are the media's fault. The portrayal of Americans has been somewhat onesided ever since 9/11.

I'd choose Europe or NZ if I were you. Languages use the same alphabet and they have a more or less Western lifestyle there, so less of a culture shock than Japan.
>> Anonymous
Go for Europe. Like the other Anon said, they really only hate American politics, not the people so much. Just for the love of God, learn the local customs of what ever country you're going to. The only reason you might be considered rude is if you forget to say 'hello' in the right setting or something like that.

Swissfag here. Allow me to second what has been said here - US foreign and domestic policy has been making us eurofags facepalm for the past several years, but few idiots actually hate Americans per se.

At most, we at times deem the stereotypical American lifestyle and attitude as being seriously overblown, if not naive. Let's just say things like WWII sobered us up...

Should you find a job as an expatriate, you might want to stay in their own world - over here near Geneva, US expats have their schools, churches and shops.

You can also decide to live closer to the local population, and I can then guarantee they probably have a lot to bring you, just as there is a lot you can bring them.

Just don't live up to the stereotype. Don't be an arrogant prick. Extra points if you end trying to learn the local language: it's always appreciated, and should be enough to shut a few anti-americunts up.

Japan is an interesting and surely-exotic idea, but you would probably never become more than an expatriate worker there.

NZ looks so nice even eurofags consider it a place to run to if the shit hits the fan, but it's really far off...

OP here,
many thanks for the advice. i was pretty close to taking college level japanese courses, both lingual and historical, but i'd rather not if i'm not going to be living there.

>>44407

i was completely intent on learning the language and living with the locals as if i were one of their own. i do not really have any desire to remain part of an american culture. i would also be completely willing to change my citizenship to whatever country i move to.

i basically want a completely new life, and i'm not dreaming of riches; i would be completely happy as something like a shop owner or maybe even as a lift operator, depending on how well that can sustain a normal lifestyle. how easy would it be to live a simple lifestyle like this?

Actually it depends on the level of openness. Germans tend to rip on America these days, but if you seem open minded and distinguish yourself from the masses, show an open mind ans some education you're good to go and mist would welcome you with open arms. Seriously, jumping ship now is probably a VERY good idea.
Alternatively you could take a look at the netherlands, belgium and england. Also: Australia

Europe sucks, and everyone pretty much hates you. Don't get me wrong, I had German friends, and German girlfriends, but overall, you'll feel just like a nigger walking downtown.

What actually happened: a few banking, steel and armament moguls getting fat on the war while the rest of the country froze its ass lined up along the border, waiting for the Axis to blitzkrieg us.

Those guys probably did help a lot in us not getting invaded. Coincidentally, they indeed may be the worst thing in Switzerland. Especially the bankers.

Don't get me wrong. Switzerland is a very nice country... for the rich. Otherwise, it's just a fairly boring place with an existing but half-broken social system. Not to mention cartels in all sectors of the economy that artificially maintain prices high.

Switzerland IS built upon hypocrisy, yes. I'd recommend Germany over it for that reason, but it also has its shortcomings.

Overall, as an American, you'd rather avoid France. At all costs. Complaining is part of their culture, and the US precisely is a nice scapegoat to them these days. They're never too serious in their railing, but knowing how you folks easily get offended when one criticizes your country...

Belgium ought to be okay, but for the fact the country's currently split for cultural reasons.

Highschool Japanese will not make it being easier to assimilate. Unless you are a native born Japanese, you will never assimilate. And even if you were native born, having lived outside of Japan for such a long time, it would make it incredibly difficult for them to accept you back into the fold. Even to the point that they have schools for people like that to attend, so that they can become more Japanese again.

So in the end, you'd never assimilate. You could speak the language with near native fluency, but you'd still never assimilate.

OP here. thank you for all the advice, but i'd like to get something straight: i hate america as much as you euros. there is absolutely nothing about this country i would be willing to even stand up for in a conversation, let alone fight/war. i just want to be part of a new culture, but don't necessarily want a culture shock, like japan. the reason i ask about anti-american sentiments is because i dont want to be like>>44531and be completely rejected before i can gain a toehold. so all you who are saying be open minded and whatnot, that pretty much goes without saying, but thank you.

The borderguards, policemen, etc. see my passport/Personalausweis treat me as they would any normal German in spite of the fact that it says that I was born in the USA.

If you manage to naturalize as a German, I'm pretty sure you'll be treated well, but this generally requires leaving your US citizenship behind which is a bad deal. Germans generally aren't treated well in any country where we go. Think about this especially if something seriously bad happens and you're forced to return to the USA for whatever reason. Think about that. They'll literally refuse you at the border. You may want to think about limiting the list of countries you would be willing to renounce your citizenship for to Great Britain and Canada.

I want to say, saying that we're not treated well in other countries is a bit of an understatement. Especially the Americans have no cause to complain. Especially considering what German nationals go through on a regular basis in your country and how they were treated for the past 60+ years. I try not to hold it against any of you on a personal level, but all the same I don't actually consider myself American (except by coincidence of birth) and probably never will.

OP, I'd recommend any of the Scandinavian countries. People speak English well enough (you'll have a hard time speaking with even the educated youth in Italy, Spain and even France or Germany, sadly) and the cultures are generally more open.

It's also high taxes, not-so-open people and dark winters.

No problem about the Japan thing. I'm still hurdling down that path myself though. Took it in highschool and I'm working through it in college. I know the limits of the society and quite frankly wouldn't want to live there. It's nice to visit, the people are great, but I know my boundaries.

I can understand on why you'd want to jump ship though. I feel the same way at times. I don't know if I'd completely move without doing some serious travelling first. You should try backpacking Europe or something along those lines. Visit there a lot, get to be familiar with it all and then start to think about moving.

Time spent abroad can really help you appreciate life back at home too. So in that respect I'd kind of recommend going to Japan just for the experience and culture shock.

At the very least though, you'll probably see the good and the bad with clearer eyes.

And at the very least, don't worry what they think of you. Just don't be an asshole, work hard, and respect their culture and traditions. Also learn their language/dialect.

In regards to Germany, I had heard they had really strict immigration laws. You have to have a job lined up and be earning at least 60,000$ or something to that effect.

If your goal is to dissociate yourself from the crap that America is going through, then what you want is impossible. Where you were born is a part of you.

Look at it this way, no matter where an ethnic German is born they bear the collective responsibilty for what Germany did 60 years ago. This is a rule that has no boundaries. It makes no sense. It's a stigma that they're expected to deal with from day one for the rest of their lives, their only escape is death.

The truth is that it will never be this bad for Americans, because the world matured a great deal since 1945 and what America did in comparison is like almost nothing. Take comfort in this fact.

Only Americans can get this visa, and they give us Canadians the same treatment. So, what are you waiting for? Start looking for an employer!

Oh boy. I haven't done that much serious travelling. I've just done a lot of reading. I do intend to backpack through Europe in a few years (and will probably be making a thread on how to go about that at some point), however I can't say I'm a well travelled person. Furthest I've been was Japan and that wasn't even for that long.

That's not to say I haven't been bitten by the travel bug. A lack of funds, people who actually want to travel, and prior engagements (like school) are stopping me from doing any real travelling. But I'm pretty much centering my career goals as a means to travel.

It astounds me that some people grow up having never left their county let alone their state. I think it's important to get out and see the world. We've only got one life and why spend it at home.

Needless to say I do want to live abroad for a while also, but I'll probably always come back to America, for better or worse.

no, american money hasn't always had religious references on it. that started in the 50s with godless ruskie hysteria.
we have separation of church and state and that's all you need to know. fundies like to harp on "america being founded as a christian nation". no, just because it was founded BY people who were christians does not mean they intended it to BE a christian nation. again, christianity is a religion; a church, and america is a nation; a state. they are separate. religious symbols are illegal on public property. if you find a courthouse with a statue of the ten commandments on its lawn you're in the south. that's the only place in america where the authorities turn a blind eye to that sort of thing, just as they turned a blind eye to slavery continuing through to the 1940s.
>> Anonymous
Religious symbols aren't illegal on public property, they just can't be tax-supported or exclude other religious symbols. If you made them illegal entirely you'd be limiting free speech rights.
>> Anonymous
Also, as you'll recall from endless debates in America in recent years, the phrase "separation of church and state" appears nowhere in the Constitution. What America has is a non-establishment clause, so there can't be a Church of America like there was a Church of England. Different animal.

LOL, people wouldn't even know you're American unless you tell them you're an AMerican and act like an obnoxious retard all the time.

The main problem with Americans overseas is that they talk loudly about themselves all the fucking time. Most cultures don't do this. Turn down the volume and show interest in other people and you'll be fine.

Why because you didn't speak the language?

That's only as *customers* : "The survey was taken by employees in 4,000 hotels". "The study asked respondents to rank clients".
While Americans are typically obnoxious with everybody, not just employees.

French people don't travel a lot out of France, that's why they said ""When they go abroad, French travelers demand the same quality they'd get at home," "

But as a french I've never had problems with that
I try to speak the local language (even when I was in croatia)

To OP just go to Europe, there are a lot of different cultures and really different of US
Also if you're bored of US don't think you are going to Europe to be treated like a King, most europeans don't like Americans so much but if you try to speak the language, to try to eat local food that can be good

They say french are arrogant, hate foreigners blabla.... that's wrong, they just hate people who come to France to go to Disneyland and eat at MacDonald ok?

Europe is pretty good because you just have to drive 500 km to discover a totally different culture

Spainfag here. I know some young Frenchmen and I have even some French coworkers, and they all seem pretty nice. It's funny how you Gaulish people get completely drunk with half a martini. Nevertheless, bartenders here actually complain about the fact that most Frenchies ask them to speak in French instead of them learning Spanish themselves.

By the way OP, if you are coming to my country, learn some Spanish basics on the Internet or something or you'll be doomed as Spaniards either do not understand English at all or refuse to speak it... but avoid Mexican Spanish for Satan's sake. There is only one thing that Spaniards hate more than an American trying to speak Spanish with a Mexican accent, and it is an American trying to speak Spanish with a Mexican accent who happens to be black and/or gypsy.

I can't believe this topic went on so long without someone pointing out the obvious flaws in the OP's plan.

To the poster who moaned about New Zealand's point system, then told the OP to go to Europe: quit speaking out your ass, at least with the point system people have a chance to go to their country and get a work permit/become a citizen, the EU makes it impossible for anyone who isn't skill-less from some destitute crap hole of a country or Muslim (and skill-less).

NZ Point System: Oh, you have a degree? You're health is good? You're under thirty? Fuck mate come right on in!
EU immigration: Oh, you're not from a third world nation? You don't not have skills? Well fuck right on off, then because we don't want your kind around here!

We dont hate Americans. Just bring your wallet.
>> Anonymous
In my experience as a Eurofag, I only feel seething violent spite towards Americans when they act like loudmouthed, whiny, arrogant faggots as if they're blessing us by being there. Just try to understand that over here we aren't as overtly opinionated and try to be as reserved as possible.

Case in point: fat American tourist walking down a tiny ass hill shouting "PHEW that is some trek."

I CLIMBED A FUCKING MOUNTAIN THE DAY WHILE FOLLOWING A HERD OF DEER UP A FUCKING VERTICAL CLIFF FACE. FUCK YOU.

Another case: Two fat fucks in a McDonalds loudly insulting the people who work there because they "can't hold down a real job." Get the fuck out.

*ahem* so anyway just steer clear of that shit and you'll be fine. I've met a lot of friendly, nice Americans who work over here and they're getting along great.

This is assuming you really are American.

As for NZ, they hate foreigners as a rule.

I'll stand on my podium for a bit. I too jumped ship. Well, more accurately I still retain my citizenship and I am an expatriate worker in Afghanistan (a civilian). Since I began working overseas I've had enough money to travel around. However, I come from a military career which made me quite a few enemies in the muslim (and hence European) world.

First, when travelling I identified myself (to non-officials like friends' friends, or strangers) as a Finnish citizen. I did this because
a) Finns look like me
b) Finns are generally a neutral party in 99% of nations, and don't attract much attention internationally
c) Many people like Finns because of their successes in motorsport, olympic sport, etc
d) You'll hardly ever run into any other Finns, who might question your story if they try and speak Finnish to you and you are unable to track
e) Most Finns speak english anyway, so it will account for your knowledge of the language
It works well, I travelled around with a finn flag patch on all my luggage and my jacket. Nobody thought twice.

The other option to transition from US to <insert country here> without going broke or losing jobs or being unemployable is to work as a US civilian overseas.

You can land a job as an IT guy, or any other profession wherever there is a military base. Work there (making pretty decent cash too) while learning the local language, and you can either attempt to transition to a local-national job doing the same thing bi-lingually, or marry a local national to obtain your citizenship.
>> Anonymous
>>48482
Continuing..
As a US civilian (usajobs.gov is a good place to start) you can do just about anything. US Bases and diplomatic presences are everywhere, and they all need english speaking Americans to run their gyms, stores, gas stations, IT systems, etc etc. They're like cities within cities of Americans. The downside is you're in a mostly American area, the upside is youre making USD adjusted for inflation/exchange rate and local living expenses.

My next gig will be in Japan, up north in Misawa, which houses a nice little Air Force base without the child rape and stigma of the big moronic Marine/Navy/Army bases in the south.
Could've gone to Belgium, France, Holland, UK, Spain, Azores, Iceland, or most other nations, but chose Japan because I'm a weeaboofag and I love .jp chicks. Also, the skiing's great and the locals up north love Blues and Jazz. Fun place to be.

tl;dr: You never know a place until youve gone through the daily grind, so get a job there first with a safety net. Then GTFO America.

ok i may be the only one, but why not try staying in America and help fix it up instead of mooching off of it till it starts to not impress you, then jump ship. I'm not republican, Im not a democrat. I think the two party bullshit is tearing the country apart while giving an excuse to do whatever we (the government) want. Stay and help make a change. We can save the country before it dives into the shitter. we just need the people who care not to abandon hope. If all the reasonable, sound-minded people leave because they don't like how we are turning out, it will only accelerate the process. And moving to a different country won't help in the long run...

I've lived in seven different states across the US, and I'd say roughly three-fourths of Americans over the age of 20 are not normally overly loud, obnoxious, or arrogant. As a britFag living and working in Germany, some advice OP. You need a degree in something in demand to work in Germany since unemployment is high here. Go into everything with an open mind. This is of course true for all European countries.

>>48842
Nothing wrong with the UK itself, but so many people like myself are leaving due to mass non-caucasian immigration into the UK. The Germans complain (quietly) about turks, but they havent seen nothing compared to the UK. But of course I can't say that, it's racist.
