for one way i think jetstar, qantas or jal are the cheapest. for return pick a carrier that makes a stopover somewhere - malaysian isn't bad.
if you find one though buy it now or as soon as you can because otherwise it will be twice the price. i did the same thing (but from sydney) last year but left it late and the one-way fare was double. everybody flies back and forth from japan and australia that time of year.
remember - jetstar only flies to kansai, so if you don't plan on going to osaka or kyoto, you're going to have to fork out for the shinkansen for tokyo or wherever.
