The entire south is pretty much fail from a tourist standpoint (arguably every other standpoint as well) I lived all over for most of my childhood and it just sucks. The weather is terrible (way too humid) and if you aren't the exact same kind of person as the local majority (blacks in the black part of town, baptist in the baptist part of town, mexican in the mexican part of town) its like you're an alien. If I were gonna go to the south (being held at gunpoint or an equally dire scenario) I would go to (in this order) Nashville, Tennessee, Alexandria, Virginia, or Austin, Texas. Georgia is pretty boring. Avoid Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama like the plague unless you like dialects of English that are literally impossible to understand and nothing but trailer parks and planned developments. Florida is probably the most racist and most backwards part of the entire south once you get north of all of the touristy places.
Just go somewhere interesting if you can. If you want to stay on the continent, Mexico City is awesome. It's not nearly as dirty and poor as the rest of Mexico and has some awesome attractions. New York (where I live now for college) is fun. Southern California is a great place if you've never been. Vancouver is really good too.
