It's possible to sleep rough in public places and not be bothered by cops or even the homeless. The likelihood of being "robbed and killed" while traveling is slimmer than people like to admit. Provided you're not wandering around dodgy areas, you should be fine. Even then, simply looking like you're just passing through, have a place to be and not flashing too much expensive items should see you through. Just don't be stupid, and you should be fine. Avoid anyone who's too eager to be your friend, get to know everybody you're going to travel with first and just keep your guard up generally.
