I'm going to New York over New Years and have found an apartment to rent in Harlem. What is the neighborhood like? I'm not going to get killed or anything if I stay there am I?

Whereabouts in Harlem? Depending on the exact location, it could make a pretty big difference in safety.

No. But for a good test, go to your prospective street at night. If you get scared from all the black folks in the dark, consider moving to DUMBO or Hoboken or similar.

Yeah, because renting an apartment for a £grand a week makes me poor doesn't it. My uni accommodation is £85 a week.

No, they're gentrifying Harlem, so it's expected to become very nice, like the rest of Manhattan. Some of it already is.
For those that don't know what gentrification is, it basically consists of kicking out all the poor black people (tearing down the projects, moving out the homeless etc) and raising the value of the property, and is happening in basically every large North American city.

Fixed, see pic.

New York is different though, international real estate market so it's not subject to the same forces that, say, Las Vegas or Southern California might be.

I mean, I guess Harlem is fine if you enjoy living 100 blocks away from anything interesting.

The house from The Royal Tenenbaums is there. When I moved to NYC, I decided I needed to see it. So during my first month in NY, I rode the subway up there and saw it. "Yup, there it is." Then I rode the subway back to the East Village where I live. I haven't gone back into Harlem since. It's been almost 8 months.

Western Harlem (Hamilton Heights, Manhattanville, Sugar Hill) is pretty decent. Nice townhouses and such, not too many projects, more safe, etc. Basically just stay away from the projects and you should be fine.

yeah, this is true. there's a push to get normal manhattan people to buy luxury condos in harlem...they've really cleaned it up, even gone so far as to change street names to make it more touristy and not ghetto.
and yeah, gentrification is happening in places all over the U.S., canada, and europe.
chicago is one city where they've really cleaned up...i think there's like, one project building left, and there's plans to demolish it.
remember the super bowl in detroit a few years ago? they removed homeless black people from the city by the busload, and never brought them back.
and let's just say they were pretty content with what happened to the black population of new orleans in hurricane katrina...made demolishing the projects much easier.
i'm glad it's happening though...makes it safer and nicer.

probably just left them in some shitty little town hours away. i mean, there really isn't an incentive for the city to have them back or anything...it's like what happened to New Orleans, why would they want all those ghetto niggers back? i hear most residents are loving it there now that katrina cleaned up a little...

A friend of mine lives there. He says it isn't that bad but he did have to stop a pick pocket one night. He told me that he caught his hand in his pocket and turned around and knocked his lights out. The guy he hit had several friends around and my friend thought that he would not make it home that night. To his surprise they all started laughing at their friend who had got knocked out. Eveything was fine after that.
