I heard it's kind of cheap to travel by train in France. Is it true?

What would it cost to go from Metz to Avignon for example?

Prices are very low compared to plane or to other European countries. There are a lot of different rebates depending on the time you book or your age. Just go to www.sncf.com to check prices, the site can be displayed in English.

Normal prices depend on time, date, and age. It's most expansive on friday afternoons/evenings and sunday afternoon for example.
There are special prices also.

http://www.voyages-sncf.com is the website to look prices up. it's available in english of course.
Travelling from metz to avignon will cost you 90 € on a friday night. That's the normal price.

However i did search fo 17 july and found a special price of 49€
As you see, prices can vary greatly, and it's quite difficult to undertand why there a special on that day for example.
