Ok this question goes out to mainland Chinese

I've been offered a pretty good job in mainland China, but I want to know something first:

I'm 75% Taiwanese, and 25% Japanese, raised in the USA since I was 10 years old. My Chinese is not great, but passable with a Taiwanese accent.

What I would like to know is if I should expect any discrimination on the mainland because of my ethnicity, and what I could do about it. Please be honest, thanks.

Where in China? I couldn't imagine any of the major cities would look twice at you (although people might think you are stupid/retarded if your chinese is bad yet you look/act chinese). However, you wouldn't be the first overseas chinese to come back, so again, no big deal. As far as being 1/4 Japanese, I wouldn't bring it up in casual conversation, but I doubt it is apparent from your physical attributes.
This is from a white guy with semifrequent dealings with China, so take it with a grain of salt.

As long as you don't bring up your Japanese ethnicity you'll do alright, Chinese people are very friendly. Everybody and their mother will be able to tell that you're a foreigner though, which will make you a mark for thieves and swindlers. If you want my advice, make some really good friends as soon as you enter the country, and rely on their advice and guidance as much as you can.

Go visit China first. I'm quote well traveled, even to many 3rd world countries.I'm also pretty patient and understanding that you need to let culture shock wear-off.

But China was a shithole,IMO. Maybe you can handle it though.

They will fucking hate you. You deserve something better.

>>Taiwanese accent
Fuck you. It's the communists that have an accent.

If you don't talk they will think you are chinese. Just pretend you are a mute or something.

OP here

Well, I can't quite tell who's chinese or not, but thanks anyway. I know there are lots of Taiwanese and Japanese who do business in China... so I'm assuming it's not TOO bad. On the other hand, when I ask this on some Chinese boards I often get some RAAAAGE, so I"m hoping that's just an internet thing

If anyone else has advice please share

You won't have any big problems. Chinese are friendly, and they are happy to meet **anybody** with foriegn connections.

Yes, the Chinese do hate Japan. But I don't remember any of the Japanese I knew in China having any serious problems.

But you are 75% Taiwanese, so you'll be fine. Just don't shoot your mouth off about Taiwan independence.

Avoid politics, stick to business, and you'll be fine. Remember, Chinese love money more than Americans do. Aside from Tibet and Taiwan, money trumps politics in China.

if its for business Chinese people generally dont care with who they do it. i got a lot of looks on the streets but the people at my jod didnt care. that was in Hong Kong though.

The main difference between Americans and Chinese is that Americans love money so they can buy ridiculous bullshit with it, and Chinese want money mostly for egotistical purposes.

>Americans want money so they can spend it all, Chinese want money to horde it.

Fixed for you.

Do mainlanders really hate people from taiwan?

You should try to get a job in the US. You know, the country that protected, educated, and gave you all the conforts you may need.

Instead of the country that repeatedly commits, fraud, playing dirty with their currency, gross pollution, and yes even grosser human rights violations than the US. Not to mention the country that wants to pwn the fuck out of your sovereign motherland.

But if you want to help the chinks get rich, by all means go ahead.

They mostly speak Mandarin, so Cantonese users would be fucked.

Depends where in China, South and North are quite different in the way they view each other.

Most of the people who weren't Mainland refugees fleeing the Communists speak a dialect of the Min language.
