japan+phones? Anonymous

I'm going to Japan in June for two months and I need some info on cell phones and/or services in Japan. Currently I use a prepaid service, which means phoning in foreign countries is going to cost a fortune.

Is it possible to buy prepaid cards or something like that in Japan? Any other suggestions? I own a Softbank cell phone if that's relevant.

Yes.

All the better. I have one myself and I've use SoftBank Global Rental. You can also buy the 3G prepaid SIM that just came out recently.

keep in mind you can only rent SIMs with SoftBank Global Rental at major airports, whereas you can buy the prepaid 3G SIMs at any SoftBank location.

When I was in Japan in the summer of 2006, I bought a prepaid cell phone and a phone card worth 3000 yen, which lasted me for the entire 5 weeks. I didn't do much actual calling but I texted a fair amount. The phone itself cost about 75 bucks converted into US dollars. Mine was a Vodofone btw.
