White lines Anonymous
So, I'm flying over Siberia, as you do, and as dawn breaks I notice these odd straight white lines over the surface below, which at this point seems devoid of any settlements or activity. What are they? They appear to be lying in a grid, with lines crossing every 50km or so. They also seem to ignore the lay of the land for a large part, going strait across hills and valleys. Power cables? Pipes?

Roads follow the shape of hills and valleys. These lines go straight through everything.

Sounds like a good bet, but why the grid-like configuration?

I'd imagine they'd be roads. why, then, the grid pattern? because it's russia.

They look like the seismic survey roads you see when flying over the Nullarbor. Probably haven't been used for decades.
