I'll be teaching German in the US for half a year. I'm a bit worried about the fact that I can't choose the state I'm going to work in at all. That probably means that they're going to put me somewhere random or wherever someone is needed. Anyway, offically it's possible to get any state.

I still have the choice not to accept the actual state, so I'd like to know if there are certain states which could be considered a total win or a complete failure?

Enjoy your Idaho

Try to stick to the (north) west coast or the east coast.

Worst states: anywhere in the Appalachia (Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia, Virginia, east Ohio, Mississippi, Kentucky), Louisiana, Oklahoma, Florida, Missouri, Kansas, Utah (MORMONS!), Idaho, Wyoming, Montana.

Pretty much most states in the US suck pretty hard, actually. Wow.

I suppose the best states would be:
Midwest-
Minnesota, Illinois (maybe), Wisconsin, Nebraska,

Rocky Mountains-
Colorado (only good state in this area)

Southwest-
Arizona, California (northern)

Northwest-
Washington and Oregon are both great states

Northeast-
Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont (nice scenery but nothing else), Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island

If you get Hawaii, LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY

I don't know about Alaska, though. That's one of the only states I haven't been to.

Generally unless you're in a largish city there won't be much nightlife. In most places the scenery is nice I suppose. I don't know... the US is a really fucking big country. A lot of the places here suck.

Thanks so far. As I said before, I unfortunately can't choose the state I'll be working in. The only thing I can do is turn down the offer and/or cry about it. I consider myself as rather open-minded and think I could cope with every state. But then again, I've never been to the US and wanted to be sure whether there are some horrible states I should avoid and some great ones I'd love.

So far I've only heard of two people doing this teaching program. One of them ended up in Minnesota, the other one in Alaska. Alaska wouldn't be my kinda thing I'm afraid, not just because I don't like the climate and all that, but also because it's so far away from the other states and doesn't seem like "real" America.

Your advice sucks

How in the fuck are Gerogia, Virginia and Florida bad? And LOL Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska being the best?

Pretty much ever state up and down the east coast is great to decent. CA and WA are livable places on the west coast even though I don't like the west coast. Not a fan of the midwest either.
>> Anonymous
Go for WA

I've lived in Indiana for most of my life and I love that place.

I'm living in North East Florida now and this place absolutely sucks.

The Midwest is the best part of the country in my opinion. Chicago is an awesome city, probably my favorite one. Detroit sucks, don't go there. Minneapolis is a great city, just be prepared for REALLY FUCKING COLD winters.

Georgia and the south are terrible. Everyone is either fat, ugly, stupid, or a trendwhore. The weather is god-awful. That's probably the reason everyone there is so fat. OP here. Yeah, I'm German but I don't necessarily want to have anything to do with other German people, so the fact that there people of German origin in some states wouldn't make them more interesting for me.

What's the situation of German in American schools anyway? Is it offered everywhere or would you say that there are more people learning German as a foreign language in certain state?

Listen to this man, for the most part.
I've never heard anything good about Arizona. Also you'll hate the weather. Also, he's very much right on the states bordering the Great Lakes (Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan). However if you get assigned to a city called "Detroit" or "Flint", pack your bags and get the fuck back to Germany.

>>52088
Outside of Atlanta, Georgia is pretty much shit. Inside Atlanta you have the same problems you find in all other cities - it's nothing special but it's better than the rest of this state (And region, for the most part).

>>52355
Spanish is by far the most popular foreign languages. Maybe three fifths of those learning foreign languages in school learn Spanish. Another fifth or so might learn French. The remaining fifth is divvied up between German and Japanese (Primarily) and a few other languages (Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Latin).
With French, German, Japanese and Spanish you'll probably find a program for the language in every school you go to, excepting rural areas. You're probably not going to have very many students though - depending on the size of the school, which year German and the presence of German communities in the area, you could be as low as a few students or as high as a full class.
tl;dr - Expect to be sent absolutely anywhere and have a lot less students than the other foreign language teachers.
>> Anonymous
>>52434
According to the map there, West Virginia beats Connecticut.

For OP: West Virginia is the last place you want to get sent. It's arguably the worst state in the country.

Unrelated note: OP, do you have the possibility of being sent to an American territory? Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, etc.? What about Washington D.C.?

>>52442is pretty spot on.

My high school offered Spanish, French, Japanese, and German. Popularity was high to low, respectively. I think they actually phased German out, too, because not enough kids were taking it.

On the flipside, that means you'll probably have either small classes or a school with money or both, which is good. Unless, of course, you're somewhere where there's a big German population (I have no idea where that is...PA maybe?).

My school was in CA btw.

If you're only going for 6 months though, just go anywhere. I live in San Francisco, but I'd be down to go live in Montana or Tennessee or wherever for 6 months. It's not that long of a time, and I'm sure there's something to like/dislike about most places.

As a resident of W.Va. I don't get the hate. No, it's certainly not the best state, but we have some unrivaled natural beauty here. We really can't help that it's poor. The state was quite well off in the early 20th century when steel and coal were king. Unfortunately, that economy tanked, and the geography isn't conducive to large urban areas. Still, you'll be pushed to find a kinder population as long as you're not causing trouble. A lot of people here may live at or near the poverty line, but that doesn't make them the insane Hollywood hillbilly stereotype.

This state has a heck of a lot a problems, but it's perfect if you want to go somewhere and be left alone. And guess what? That's what the residents here cherish most.

The west is pretty nice (CA, OR, WA, and NV). Utah is a beautiful state, but the Mormons are fucking ASSHOLES. Seriously. AZ and NM have a lot of mexicans, which wouldn't really affect your job or anything, but you'd want to pick up some Spanish. TX is the same closer to the border, and any state in the South or the interior you'll have to deal with some seriously backwards Christians. I'd assume New England and the North East are more along the lines of the West, but I can't say because I've never spent much time there.

TX is nice if you get landed in a larger city, and NV is great because everything is always open all the time and the nightlife is great. Also, NV has some of the most amazing scenery you're likely to find in the US, but you'll have to drive out into the middle of nowhere to see it.

agreed, I find Knoxville to be the best place to live in Tennessee. Mostly because Nasheville and Memphis suck. Chattanooga isn't that bad.

Music is pretty great. just about every genre under the sun. and the venues are great too. I remember going to a punk show at an dilapidated house near UT. Absolutely Fantastic.

Minneapolis, MN resident here going to school in Madison, WI. I can attest to what these people have said about the upper midwestern states. People are friendly, places are clean (for the most part, Milwaukee and places of chicago blow), and there is plenty to do. Minnesota and Wisconsin look like Germany too, so moving wouldn't be that much of a shock. Northern Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin are boring and just farmland, but Duluth, Minneapolis area, Madison, and Milwaukee are great! If you can get a job in a suburb of Minneapolis, TAKE IT. Things are cheap, places are nice, and the girls are hot.

No trying to shit on anyone who is from any of the other states, but just go to Lower NY or mabey parts of CA. Ive lived in europe (Mostly France,Poland, and Malta), and have met alot of people doing study travels to the States. They get placed in places like Georga or TN and arent used to being in places with almost no international population/culture exposure.
But there is an upside to living in a place like that, you would make a difference, and could educate ouryoung illinformed youth who get their international cultural information for a shitty TV. Good luck!
