What's the best way to go about visiting Japan. I really want to go sometime around early summer 2009 but am not really sure on how to do it. Should I do a tour group, or should i find a local online to meet me somewhere? Halp

I just reserved a hotel room, bought a plane ticket and went.
Flying by the seat of one's pants is the only way to travel.

Not really an issue if you book via expedia or kayak or travelocity like most people and stick to the parts of tokyo officially marketed squarely toward foreign visitors by the JNTO with lots of english-language material, signage, to guide you around, a bus tour, etc

However, this will probably be a really boring waste of money for you unless you're in the target market for whoever JNTO is aiming toward (old people with money trying to be worldly and cultural)

This. If you're looking to stay in Tokyo, I suggest reserving a room at the Sakura Hostel in Asakusa. Best place I ever stayed at.

go by yourself or with a friend or two.
