I've been there. The colonial center is awesome.

If you're going to the Caribbean side of the Yucatan skip Cancun and head down to Tulum, an excellent Mayan ruins right on the Caribbean. You can swim in the sea amidst the hundreds of years old ruins.

Did you visit Chichen Itza?

Yes it was the highlight of that trip and prompted me to have many other great adventures, like visiting Machu Picchu. I'd say it was a spiritual experience, seeing the amount of work humans are willing to do in the name of the soul and god.

Go early before the crowds and you can get some pictures without the people climbing all over the ruins.

They no longer allow for people to do that, sadly. At least not on the big pyramid.

If you ever come to Merida visit the Historic Center, Paseo De Montejo and eat at a place called Los Almendros, best restaurant for local food.

The Cathedral is nice as well. And if you're going to the beach Celestun is very nice.
