LAfag here, but have been to SF a few times in the past. Cool spot.

I suggest the usual... trolley rides, walking around, bridge, alcatraz tour etc.

Go to Haight street for Aardvark's record store, at least. Lot of good, hard to find movies too. Trolleys are boring and the lines are long as FUCK.

You could probably get some good weed from golden gate park across the street from Aardvark's if you're into that. Never done it myself but I think my friends have.

Fisherman's Wharf is good if you like seafood and Pier 39 is good if you're going with a lady friend. Never actually been on a tour of Alcatraz but if you're into that sort of thing it'd supposed to be pretty cool.

Living in the Bay Area (San Jose) you'd think I'd have more suggestions, but I always take the Caltrain up and ride the bus around... my friends and I generally try to stick to what we know instead of running the risk of getting lost.

North Beach: Boring unless you're 21
Chinatown: It's like every other Chinatown
SOMA: Nice to walk around, but nothing to do unless you have lots of cash $$$$
Mission: Aside from good burritos, nothing to do unless you're 21. Also there are lots of Mexicans.
Haight-Ashbury: Agressive homeless people, "street kids" that get dropped off by their parents from Marin County daily.
Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf: Tourist shithole.
Nob Hill/Russian Hill: Pretty buildings, but you can't go into any of them.
Telegraph Hill: I recommend this. Walk up the Filbert Street steps from the east side, then check out Coit Tower.
Union Square: Nice if you like (window) shopping.
Financial District: Big buildings, but you can't go into any of them.
Tenderloin/Civic Center: Homeless people, crack dealers, City Hall is impressive.
Castro/Upper Market: GAY AS FUCK
Golden Gate Park/Avenues: Nothing special.

Ocean Beach: Water too cold to swim, too damn far from everything else.
SF Zoo: Man-eating tigers on the loose.
Golden Gate Bridge: Impressive, but lots of suicidal maniacs and Japanese tourists.
Alcatraz: Nice, if you have the money.
Cable Cars: Expensive as shit, hour-long waits in the summer.
F-Market Trolley: A nice ride, goes from downtown to Fisherman's wharf along the Embarcadero, cheap, nice views.
AT&T Park: Expensive, but nice if you like baseball and your team's in town, otherwise enjoy seeing the Giants lose.
MOMA: Only worth it on the first Tuesday of the month.
Legion of Honor: Too damn far from anything, expensive.
California Academy and Sciences: It's not going to be open when you get there, lol.
Conservatory of Flowers: Good if you like flowers, I guess.
de Young Museum: Never been there, but it looks nice.

I live in the Castro so I know the Castro/Mission/Lower Haight area best. You can walk from the Castro to Lower Height to the Mission pretty easily. I would say that would make one good day's activity. Lower Haight has Toronado, the best beer bar in San Francisco. There's also a good sausage place, a sandwich shop, and a pizza place nearby and you can take food into the bar. The Castro has a lot of diners. It's great after you've been drinking or you're otherwise out late and want a bite to eat; Orphan Andy's is open 24 hours, and Cafe Baghdad is open late. Or maybe get breakfast at the Cove. The Mission has a ton of bars, a few thrift stores, and lots of restaurants (not just mexican either...). If it's a nice day go to Zeitgeist and hang out back.

I don't really know the other parts of SF as well. Union square is for department stores and big name shopping. There's lots of good indian places in the tenderloin, once you get past the crackheads. Upper Haight has plenty of stupid teenagers and pretty good "Alternative" shopping. Golden Gate Park is huge and there are a lot of different things there. Maybe check out the arboretum and afterward head to the 9th & Irving area. Or make a trip out to the Sutro bath ruins. It's pretty neat... Fisherman's Wharf is a waste of time. The Ferry Building is cool, and has good lunch spots...Delica rf-1 has good bento, and you can get cassoulet at some french place I can't remember off the top of my head. Japantown is good for Kinokuniya...otherwise good Japanese food is, for the most part, elsewhere in the city.

Ameoba is the record store, end of haight street. Dunno what your tastes are? I like General Bead in SOMA if you are crafty. Joes Cable Car ( just past silver on mission st ) is the best hamburgers on earth. Cayuga Park is faskinatin. See the golden gate bridge but dont walk it unless you dont mind cold long walks that must be repeated.

Hey, I am too! July 1st through the 8th. Does anyone know if I could smuggle a small glass pipe back from Cali to Philadelphia?

Why don't you just not bring it with you and buy a cheap one while you're there, then throw it out before you leave?

Depends on where you are. You'll see more of that in the Castro than in Hunters Point, but it's not like everyone int he city is gay.
