so we're leaving for japan for a month. 2 guys, money a couple of thousand euros (per head), not really planning ahead. which is not really true since i already made this post... BUT any tips, is it suicide to not book lodging ahead, any general shit i should know about/go see? leaving in a month. only real concern for me is spending the nights as cheaply as possible

If you're going from Europe, expect to be a bit fucked by jet lag for 3 days. So yeah you should book a hostel in the city you're flying to. Protip: go south. Kagoshima and Okinawa ftw.

definitely get info on the very least of where you want to stay and hopefully reservations at a hostel. i thought i would be fine in hiroshima but there were no rooms anywhere and i ended up taking a 15 mile trip to a hostel after midnight for somewhere to stay.

I didn't get jet lag when I went to Japan because I'd been travelling nearly 24 hours due to delays and such and was really fucking tired when I arrived.

Thus, I slept for about 10 hours on arrival and woke up at nine the next morning.

nah, go north. Hokkaido/Tohoku are great. Sapporo is a very easy city to get around in, and is astonishingly fun, considering no one ever hears about it. Plus, Tohoku is home to the Nikko Toshogu shrine (gorgeous) and, of course, Tokyo.

To repeat: go north.

Tokyo isn't in Tohoku. It's Kanto.

Leaving in a month, roughly during Golden Week, one of the two craziest travel seasons in Japan?

Nope, no reservation needed.
