Running away Anonymous
I've been thinking of leaving Canada, and abandoning everything. I'd like to go to Hawaii, and start a new life. I'll have nothing but ~$2000 CDN. Honolulu airport or Maui? Thinking of trying to get unskilled work as janitor or bellboy or something, preferably at a hotel. If that doesn't pan out, I was thinking suicide in the ocean.

What does /trv/ think?

Commit suicide first, then go to Hawaii.

I'd start out in Honolulu just because it's bigger and has more job opportunities. Also if things don't work out there you can just become homeless. Homeless in Hawaii is not the worst thing that could happen to you. Also if you can sing or play an instrument you can easily find work. If you don't like working at a hotel there's plenty of restaurants.

"Taxi-Driver" related image justifies a response.

Hawaii is a horrible, shit place. Its much more like some 3rd world country then a state in the USA. DOn't go there, even full-time employed union workers cannot afford to live there. A large percentage of people there have jobs and live on the streets, or in a car, ect. Trust me about this, I lived there.

If your a howey, don't even bother. You'll work twice as hard to keep your job with the natives, and your still going to be broke and living on the streets.

Try places in Midwest USA. People are moving away from there, but the demand for workers is only increasing.

Thanks
I'd prefer the place to be tropical or very warm year-round. Midwest isn't too appealing

Is it feasible to collect wages into a bank account, and just be homeless?

What is a howey?

OP here I decided to stay in the comfort of my home and just kill myself, thanks /trv/

Hey OP are you not content with your life, country, or both?
>> Anonymous
>>41523
I'm not content with my life, country is actually pretty damned nice, but since my life is in this country, I have to leave it too. + it's pretty cold in winter, so if I have to make any life altering choices, the new place might as well be warm all year round, at least.

Hawaii is awesome. There's a reason why everybody avoids the Midwest.

Try working out your life. Don't commit suicide or get into some bumfuck situation that makes you want to end your life. Are you going to school at the moment? What are you doing?

The guy who said that has no idea what he's talking about. I'm sure he meant 'haole' which is slang for white person.

I hope everything works out for you, good luck!

I'm 20, almost 50% done a university degree, working right now in a computer-related job for the summer, then I'm back to school. Should graduate in 2011.

I chose Hawaii because I've always wanted to go, and I figured of all places, it'd be perfect since the weather is seemingly awesome. I thought that weather should be key to human happiness (since most of the time in winter I am depressed as hell, with all this snow)

I don't really have a family to speak of; I never talk to any of them, they might as well be estranged. My dad pays for my tuition (which is a huge bonus), I only have 2 true friends (but even so, we aren't very close), and a girlfriend (the one I love the most, but for multiple reasons, have decided to break it off with).

So having not much of an impressive reason to continue this life, I thought I'd start a new one.

What I'd like to do is leave them all in doubt, and just disappear. I have considered suicide since I don't have much else to live for, considering my dead-end job and career path. It isn't dead-end career-wise, but emotionally. I think dying in Hawaii would be better than dying in Toronto. I'd like the day I die to be beautiful and warm. If things work out there, and I choose to live, awesome: it's really nice and warm all the time!

I don't know what else to say. I know it'd be a huge mistake and there's no going back. I abandon this life for good if I take that path, and am left with 2 options to either re-forge a new one or suicide.

Thanks

Do you have ANY idea how absurdly expensive the cost of living is in Hawaii?! It was usually about 30% above the national average, but that was before this oil fiasco. Due to the fact that almost everything has to be shipped over there, the cost of fueling these shipments has caused a severe inflation of prices for imports (and in Hawaii, almost EVERYTHING is imported), and now the cost of living is sitting at a bit under 40% (and closer to 50% for perishable food. its fucking ridiculous).

TL,DR: Don't move to Hawaii, you're too poor.

Too expensive for people living normally. OP could become a savage and fish for food. Of course you wouldn't be living in honolulu if that was your choice.

I'd say you have a better chance in the Caribbean.

Fly to Molokai and hang out at the Kaunakakai wharf. You could ask the commercial fisherman if they need help and if they're willing to pay. If you do find work on a boat, remember to eat some ginger beforehand so as not to become seasick.
>> Anonymous
You have three options.

(1) Suicide in Ocean
(2) Dramatic Life Saving Event where you save a life but lose yours in the struggle.
(3) Go to Alaska and become fisherman.

There's always
(3) Rape the maids.

OP, you better apply for a visa. It will take a long time to get it processed, so start now.

Anyways, Hawaii is expensive. The Midwest has a shrinking economy. Your best bet would be the South. Texas comes to mind. What is your major? That'll determine if you can get into the US or not.

Computer Science, but with this plan, I seem like I would be abandoning it

thanks all for your advice so far :)

And while the West's high tech market, Midwest automotive, and the Northeasts's financial markets collaspe, what's left? The heavy commodity South and Mountain regions.

As someone who grew up on the Big Island I would suggest finishing your degree. The telescopes (Keck and Canada-France in Kamulea, Subaru in Hilo) on Mauna Kea often employ people with entry level computer science degrees. I even knew some guys from Canada that worked at Keck.

Also the construction business has been going well on the Big Island. You might want to check that out.

I lol'd. Read a paper in the last two weeks?

Move to Colombia and get kidnapped by FARC. Free home and food, no work. Paradise!

Weather certainly has an impact on your emotional well-being, so it's not a bad idea to move somewhere warm. That said, is Hawaii really the best choice? It's expensive as hell, racism is rampant, and while you could bum it out on a beach or a park, it won't help much with your depression. I'd say try Vancouver, but rain is as bad as snow.

With $2,000 CDN, you probably could make it somewhere in Southeast Asia (Phillipines, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia) or maybe in Africa, some of the places are not that fucked up. Of course, you still have to get there.

As a Canadian, I think you can also apply for a "Working Holiday" visa and spend some time in Oz. Sure, it's winter, but should be warm enough up north. Worth a try.

Don't give up, Anon. Life sucks, but ending it all won't solve anything. Start over somewhere, if that's what you want, but keep going. Change may be just around the corner. Good luck, man.

maui and oahu are both very expensive. move to hawaii/hilo and network with some people until you get enough cash together to go to one of the 'better' islands
>> Anonymous
move to cambodia. you can clear like 200usd/week teaching english, which will have you living like a king. and you get to help kids, which might even make you feel good about yourself.

oh, and lolis
