Perhaps I have been watching the Olympics too much, but it makes me seriously want to visit China and Beijing now. However I am a bit afraid because strange things could happen seeing as China is a communist country. Has anyone in /trv/ ever been to China and if so, how was it?

China is not North Korea.

Just don't be a dumbass and wear a Free Tibet shirt and you'll be fine.

You also forgot about the "no bibles" rule.

What necessary happen? I never got this.

It's an issue that you should look at from both perspectives instead of being biased for either end.

In the 1950s China invaded and annexed Tibet. Oddly enough it was a relatively bloodless invasion. The government contented that Tibet has been a part of Chinese territory for centuries, and it kinda sort of was, it's debatable. In the 1960s, many Tibetan historical things like shrines and temples were destroyed in the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, however, the Chinese government has defended itself saying that sort of shit was going on ALL over China, not just Tibet (it was).

Many Han Chinese have emigrated to Tibet, and pro Tibetans have accused China of trying to assimilate the Tibetan people this way. The Chinese government insists this is not the case and point to the fact that the one child policy does not apply to ethnic Tibetans.

The Dalai Lama wants to rule Tibet again, but the Chinese government says that is not an option and accuse him of wanting to return the region to the medieval serfdom style society it was before Chinese rule.

Why does that sound like the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads? o.o I think the Air Nomads were based off of Tibet too.

Ok... I've been living in Beijing for 3 years

Gotta say, for Olympic they improve a lot of thing, but if you watch your TV and heard they said Beijing is awesome don't ever believe them. It's a lie.

People shit on street and their toilet don't have doors. Last week I saw a kid pee on underground train. The train is convenient but smell like rotten fish. Bus? Same smell.

Food is basically tasteless cardboard soaked in oil, unless you have money for expensive restaurants.

There's no problem with communist though. Government don't give a fuck about you. I have been talking about Tibet and Taiwan and everything but nobody cares

>>52605

About Tibet things... dunno, I think it's both parties' faults. Before China invade Tibet they have slave system. Everyone but the monks are slave and if you do something that upset the monks they literally skin you alive. I disagree with China that they destroy the cultures and all but I can't say I completely want 'free Tibet'

Tibet will die without China's help.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is the utopian socialist workers' Paradise, and Pyongyang the Sacred City of all Koreans, is its capital built with the labor of love and the wise flawless urban planning leadership of Dear Leader Comrade Generalissimo Kim Jong Il the Lodestar of the 21st Century and peerlessly great Hero of Mt. Paektu.

Please feel free to call me an arrogant American, but doesn't it make it harder as an American tourist to visit North Korea and is Kim Jong Il really a nasty dictator?

If your American. You can go on tours from china but you don't really see the cities.
>> Anonymous
>>52651
So Kim Jong Il basically has an American problem?
>> Anonymous
>>52598
OP, China is communist only in name. The way things work over there, it is more capitalistic than communist, which makes it similar to the US.

If you're into metropolitan cities, u can try Shanghai. Beijing is not as beautiful a city as Shanghai, but it does have several places worth visiting like the Olympics Stadium and Tiannanmen Square.

>>52654
Do people really shit on the streets and piss on underground trains?
As>>52621said.
Kim Jong Il really have an American problem?

Shanghai is WAY better than Beijing
people are rude, stupid and generally assholes up there in beijing

Shanghai is where civilized Chinese live.

Fuck yeah Shanghai!

Although I'm pretty sure people don't shit on the streets in Beijing, unless it's some ghetto ass part of town.

I saw them shit on the bus stop with my own eyes. Not adult, though. You think why Chinese kids' pants have hole on the butt? Not for pedo I believe. It's for shittying on the street.

The brat I saw shitting was around 12-13... not even a kid anymore

WHY the fuck do you want to visit China for???!! Do you know that they have signs up saying that "foreigners" are not "allowed" into certain areas of China?? Everything is of lower quality and they always bitch about Japan for what the army(in THAT time) did in WWII.

If anyone asked me to go and see China I would tell them to get fucked! Their breath smells, the streets are filthily and it just boggles me as to why anyone would want to go there. Oh, and by the way, leave all the romanticized ideas you had about China in America about the place, as you're in for a shock when you get there.
>> Anonymous
>>52657
THIS. People in Beijing are unbelievably RUDE. For example, if you try to catch a taxi in a crowded place, when you're about to enter the taxi some random guy will run up there, push you away, scream at you in Chinese, and just take the taxi, leave you standing there in horror. (personal experience)

And god, what they wear, their fashion make you want to vomit. It's worse than American's worse 'Gothic Lolita'. Last week there was a TV program where they film random people on street that have bad taste of fashion, what we agreed was that they could just have film the whole fucking city

Did I mention they spit everywhere? By everywhere I really mean everywhere. Department store, elevator, you name it.

Oh, no, I don't hate living here at all. I just hate people here

Not the whole China is that bad. Shanghai and Hongkong is PARADISE for food and shopping.

Haha oh wow, that sounds like fucking japan LOL.

And no there is no "foreigners not allowed"-signs in china idiot. In china they LOVE your foreign ass (and the dollars you bring)

I think you're talking about Japan, not China. Like>>52672said, Chinese worship foreigners.

Beijing is a shitty city, Shanghai and Hong Kong are awesome.

The weird thing about Hong Kong is that you're surrounded by a trillion asians all speaking in british accents, awesome.

Also China is definitely not North Korea, it certainly is authoritarian as hell but you wont be asked to bow before pictures of Glorious Leader of Chinese People's Revolution Mao Zedong, that stopped happening in the 70's
>> Anonymous
>>52692

I've been to Hong Kong and nobody I saw had a British accent, they all had Cantonese accents.

Even though you can go to Hong Kong and get by perfectly all right speaking English, the vast majority of the locals still speak Cantonese amongst themselves.

Just stop by beijing to look at some of the landmarks

I'm Chinese and I'll tell you that people north of Shanghai are all dicks (except dongbei, who are just drunk)
South China is where the cool Han people are

taiwan: like china, but better.

this man has never set foot in hong kong, 99% of us do not have a british accent except for the people that went to the special schools but even then, only some teachers there actually have a british accent

I'm actually half Shanghainese but i prefer Beijing tbh. More culture, art scene, underground music scene (punk, indie, experimental, metal, dance, everything!). The old Hutongs and areas around Hou hai are just beautiful so full of character and probably my favourite place in any city on earth. Depends on what floats your boat, culture, history, music - beijing, shopping, other stuff - shanghai.
>> Anonymous
>>52757

Houhai and 798 gallery are the only places I like in Beijing

I have done some guide works and most of my customers say places like Summer palace, Gugong, and other palaces/temples look all the same.

Do us a favor and visit Hong Kong.

I enjoyed my week in Beijing, China. You can literally see pretty much every historical thing you've heard about within the city and only have to travel about 30 minutes outside the city to see the great wall.

It was FUCKING filthy, smoggy, and covered with homeless, lepers, and pickpocketing little assholes tho. I have no interest in ever returning, but I'm glad I went
