I'm going to be studying in New Zealand for a few months starting in July. I'll have about a month around mid November when I can do/go wherever I want.
I was thinking of backpacking up and down the country for a few weeks. What should I know beforehand?
Will I be attacked/eaten by wild animals/homeless people?
Is NZ a relatively transient-friendly place?
Any particular land laws I should be aware of so as not to get shot while trespassing?

Thanks

Hello OP, do you currently know a guy called "Chris" and help him out a bit in the "Basic park/Ace" nightclub?

Kiwi here.

Very Safe
Pretty friendly.

South Island has the nicest 'savage' wilderness, if that's what you're after in your travels.

Um.. prepare to see heaps of bare rolling hills with sheep.

Yeh.. Dunno, can't say I've travelled that much around my own country, but it's definately safe, you'll be fine hitching.

And they'll be fairly lax about how you 'use the land' in terms of trespassing.

I'm not a backpacker, but you should be pretty safe. We're pretty friendly and laid back and there are no predators (of humans) or poisonous critters in NZ, outside of the white tail spider.

In the last five years or so, there's been a few cases of backpackers being murdered, but they're always made big news, so I guess if you want to die, here's the place to do it.

If you are a woman, go with a partner.

>Will I be attacked..homeless people?

New Zealand's welfare system is one of the world's finest (yes, too fine for those lazy able bums) the indigent homeless are virtually non-existent, there are some substance abusing vagabonds there and about Auckland but they follow their lifestyle by choice.
