Hello /trv/lers.

Ill be going backpacking in Europe next year, probably flying into london.

Im considering buying cheap crappy car in Europe to drive around rather than trains etc. This way I can see more and have more freedom.
Is this a good idea in terms of buying a car or would it be stupid and far too expensive?

it is expensive, but I think you would end up paying more for the car and the inevitable repairs that a used and rock bottem car would need. not to mention all the strange insurance and governmental red tape to owning a car in th eu while not being a resident.

Does anyone know about buying a car in the UK I have dual citizenship in both Australia and Britain would a British passport and international drivers license be enough to buy a car?

Driving around Australia is the preferred method of backpackers here and It was alot more fun than just local rail and Im willing to pay the extra for that freedom , within reason.

take the train. spanish gas is even cheap, in germany it's 1,56€/l. that is 3,10AUS$. don't even think of driving, insurances are required and also expensive.

You can get a used car that's suitable for prolonged travel for <£1000 in Britain if you look hard enough. Only problem is, there are only a few real deals at any given time, so you may end up needing to hire a cab to the Highlands of Scotland or something just to get it, which will probably cause you to incur heavy costs anyway.
