So /trv/, I'm heading to Chicago this weekend to visit a friend.

What can you recommend for a cheap college student to check out? Any place to get some inexpenisve garbage to bring to friends back home?

Just walk around downtown. There's plenty of places to get tourist garbage if that's what you want.

Go to Lincoln Park Zoo.... it's a free zoo, it's awesome and pretty, and it's near downtown. It has one of the best ape houses in the country.

Go get an Italian Beef sandwich somewhere. It doesn't have to be one of the famous touristy places like Mr Beef... all of those little hot dog/gyro places have them. You can go about 8 blocks down Armitage from the zoo to this little place called the Doggie Diner. It looks like a scary, dirty dive, but believe me, the food is pure Chicago goodness.

Don't go to the Southside, and make sure you get a Chicago Style Pizza.

Chicago style pizza is for tourists. Of course, OP will be a tourist, so I guess it's ok, but I spent the first 20 years of my life in Chicago and never tasted a "Chicago style" pizza or even saw one up close. The pizza real people eat is actually more like New York style... big floppy slices that are super greasy.

Super thin cracker crust is also popular.

If you are there today, the art museum is free admission on the last Thursday of every month...
Also, walk around the outskirts of downtown. Go into any shops that suit your fancy. There is a sweet ass salvation army and a very pleasant smelling chocolate factory open to the public on any day but Sunday. Go around and explore, get a little lost, just stay in sight of skyscrapers to use as landmarks. Just don't venture too far from 90/94 or too far south and you will be good.

Cool, you should be able to find whatever it is you're looking for..

I like the lake, beaches, path, volleyball, sailing, but only on the weekdays..

If you want to experience the city 'chicago style' you should try ditching the car at some point, especially if you want to do night-life stuff at peak times. Try the L/metra/cabs/cta/bike/walking. Biking is pretty much faster than using anything else, but it might not be for everyone since you'll be riding in (somewhat stationary) city traffic and more importantly watching for car doors in parallel parking lane.

For college age, Northside area like wrigelyville is full of hip people, nightlife, crazy clubs, social activities, bars, coffee shops, poetry readings, backyard barbaques, whatever. There are many good local musicians. There is also tons of theater but there are many acts that are contemporary/experimental.. There are many block parties and events, but that is starting to taper down now.

In the actual loop you can do restaurants and shopping, but it turns into a ghost town at night.. Oh, there's lots of history and architecture in the city, you can take boat tours, etc, of it.

The city is also still somewhat organized into the historic ethnic neighborhoods, so you can see little italy, greece, china, etc.. which will each have their own style, shops, restaurants, etc.

Didn't know lincoln park zoo was free, I've gone by lincoln park zoo so many times, but never tried to go in. Hmm, I've also never been to the Sears Tower either. I do like gino's east/lou's and like mustard and no ketchup on italian sausage.

Oh yeah.... my mom took me to Lincoln Park zoo every weekend when I was a kid. One of my favorite things about the city.

The whole Lincoln Park area is really nice.

Go to the hancock building. Don't take the tour up, just go up to the resturaunt ($45per) on the 95th floor or the bar on the 96th. I'd go to the bar. Both have some of the best views in Chicago, but I like going to the bar. Beers, cheap(er) bar food, piano player on weekends. There's a Cheesecake Factory resturaunt on the ground level. The architecture boat tour is supposed to be pretty cool I've heard.

Alright, I just got back today.

I spent a lot of time riding the trains, wandering around Belmont and downtown, checking out whatever I thought was interesting.

You guys sure like honking your horns at people. And the homeless are like zombies.

But I did have a really good time. It's an awesome city and I got to meet some really cool people. I can't wait to visit again!

Also, I really liked this place.
