I'm sure this has been posted a million trillion times, but can we get some stories/advice/derogatory comments about Americans wanting to emigrate to Canada? Specifically Montreal or Toronto.

Assume the emigrate has a professional degree, some money, a job lined up in Canada, and no familial or other bonds in the USA.

I only told a half-truth, really. I'm still in school so it's all hypothetical. I think I could become decently proficient in French in 3-4 years, but nowhere near a good enough speaker to use it full-time in a professional environment.

If you can get the basics under your belt, it will be pretty easy to pick up the rest once you are thrown in an environment where you speak it all the time.

How tough is it to get a job in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan etc.? Like Edmonton or Vancouver?

If you already have a job and have a work permit, the next step is to apply for a perminant residence card or whatever canada has. If the work permit IS the perm card, just stay there for 3 years and then apply for citizenship. Enjoy your canadian-ness.

WE DON'T WANT YOU.

That said, go to Montreal, and fight the good fight against the Language Nazis.

You don't want him in Toronto? I don't want YOU in Toronto because odds are you're a weeabo or a paki. GTFO of my city.

But there is no denying the fact that French Canadians are language Nazis which foam at the mouth in rage at the thought of our superior language and charming lack of accents.

Serious question to op... what American city are you leaving that you would want to move to somewhere as... uh, how can I say this as nicely as possible... fucked up as Toronto? I recommend Montreal if you don't mind stuck up French bastards.

Don't come to Toronto, we have enough immigrants here.

Come to Boston. It's practically Canada anyways, but you don't have to get a new citizenship.

not OP, but is it all that bad up there?

Fuck you, you're probably brown anyways. I for one welcome english speaking Americans who've smartened up. It sure beats listening to another group of fucking pakis or japs who can't speak the language, or those other immigrants who move into cultural districts just so they can pretend they're still in their 3rd world country for some reason.

Make sure you learn Canadian-French and not French-French.

That's a really, really good point which I haven't thought of.

The only fear I have right now is elitism, Canadians thinking I've less social capital since I come from USA and (presumably) will have an accent.

As a non-native speaker of European French (lol Britfag) could I understand / be understood by people in Quebec or Montreal?
>> Anonymous
>>7561
Yes. You can also look down on them, as the French does to French speaking Canadians (rightly so, I might add).

Gah, we don't even agree on these things between provinces. Good luck with that.

One thing to note: dual-citizenship. I have no experience, but I read about it on wikipedia. When you become a citizen, you merely SAY you are "blahblahblah" and do not lose your American citizenship.

Montreal is like Philly with Frenchies instead of blacks.

Non-Torontonians bitch and whine about how people in Toronto think that Toronto is the centre of all creation, and they get very upset and butthurt about it.

I'll admit, Torontonians do sometimes get into a "Toronto is the centre of the world" mindset, and I am here to explain why we think that.

It's because Toronto is, in fact, the centre of all creation.

Now keep sending your tax money to the government so they can send us equalization payments, so we can share in the prosperity of places like Alberta, which, while important, are, unfortunately, not Toronto.

then again, why would you want to stay being an american citizen?

I could see myself (OP) wanting to keep it for maybe a few years while adjusting. Then when shit goes bunk in America I'll drop it.

I'm not an uber-wannabe-hippie who thinks America is going into some rapid, great decay, but I do think as a young one that I will have a better live in Canada than the USA,

Holy fucking god, I just got back from Quebec and it's still the closest place I've found to heaven. Property values are 1/4 of what they are where I live in the states, the frenchie culture is adorable, and the women are so hot I ruined 3 pairs of dungarees just walking around downtown. If you can land a quebecois girlfriend, all of your physical needs shall be met for the next 3 lifetimes. Her skin was so soft it was like fucking a pile of newborn baby seals, and her vajayjay tasted like ambrosia. Canada is the reason I study french 3 hours a day and try to convert all my greenbacks to moon money before exchange rates fuck us in the ass so bad we'll need doughnut-shaped pillows whenever we sit down.

lol SARS it was a real fucking epidemic killed like 16 people. OH NO WE'RE ALL DYING !

Toronto has nice white areas. And then there are those huge fucking chink and paki areas. which suck.

Fun fact: The only way to lose your American citizenship is to explicitly renounce it in front of a counsel at a U.S. embassy.

I don't know why you'd want to drop it. Being an American who lives in Canada has quite a few advantages. Like getting health care.

No not really, every neighbourhood in Toronto is fairly diverse. Even in my neighbourhood (probably the WASPiest in TO) there is no shortage of non-white people.

Though the "paki" and "chink" areas, as you say, do tend to suck, but that is because they are more often than not in bland, dreary suburbs. Inner-city areas with lots of Chinese however, tend to rock.

Another anon wanting to move to Toronto. Unfortunately, I'm too big of a loser for Canada to want me at present. Presently looking to get into a college there, find work while I'm doing that, and then maybe I'll be doubly more appealing.

Not a weeaboo, and I find French people amusing in a "how charming but I wouldn't want to live surrounded in it" way.
