Re: guesthouses, there are a few cool guesthouses in an isolated part of Phnom Penh, right next to (and over) the Boeung Kak lake - Number Nine guesthouse is very, very popular, great view over the lake, a lot of cool people stay there, they have a large communal area, pool, hammocks and tap beer for 50cents/jug. Rooms are 3 or 4$, but they have 2 rooms in the back of the upper floor which you can get for 2$ if you ask. Also, you should try visiting Thailand and/or Vietnam too, they are close and definitely a better location to start off.
