If you're at all into scenery, hiking, nature at all, spend as much time as you can in the South Island, especially Fiordland.
I quit my job as a tubby IT department head, sold most of my possessions, took my savings and flew down to NZ. I had never hiked before, but I started off on easy-moderate tracks. It was hard as fuck at first, but within 90 days I was tackling some of the most challenging tramps in that part of the world, and loving every minute of it. Don't miss Stewart Island for some challenging tramping in one of the most remote corners of civilization in the world.
If you're not so much into nature, or want to experience the Kiwi culture, I must admit I preferred Wellington to Auckland significantly. Auckland and the top half of the North Island is great if you're interested in Polynesian culture. It's a bit of a melting pot for the Pacific nations.
Spent 9 months there, lost all the weight, gained incredible insight into the natural world and exciting and unique cultures, and would be happy to answer any specific questions anyone might have.
Queenstown and Rotorua are kind of the Las Vegasyish places in the South and North Islands respectively, so if you're into sort of mindless entertainment and showiness that's the place to go, but really it's hard to go wrong - the Kiwis are awesome, generous and for the most part genuinely alright people.
