Tourists avoid the place because it looks to rural and mundane. It is in fact, like a hill-billy BBQ at a biker bar at that place, and you will be speical and different going there as a tourist.
Also, the neighborhood around there is interesting to walk through. I recommend it. If you ever visit Germany, never rent a car, ride the trains, taxis, and walk like the locals do, you will get so much more from your experience.
Walking through 3 miles of strange German neighborhoods before getting on a city bus filled with the locals, is the only way to travel. DOn't isolate yourself from the locals, do what they do, and visit the places they do.
