Dear sirs,

I am moving to London on Dec 14th, and will be living/working there for 6 months.

My question is this: where in London should I live, and why?

As with every major city in the world, London has different neighbourhoods that attract different types of people, so...

a) where will you be working?
b) what's your accomodation budget?
c) tell us a bit about yourself. (interests, where you socialise etc.)

Fair enough.

a) I don't know where I'll be working yet. I'm getting sent there by a work-exchange program through UCLA called BUNAC, and about 90% of the people they send over find work after they arrive. I'm hoping to work in a pub nights, though - I always figured that would be interesting. I'm also hoping to work a standard 9-5 in a museum or archive somewhere, since I just graduated with a degree in Military History from UCLA.

b) I can't go much beyond 450GBP pcm.

c) I love sightseeing, traveling, biking, running, footy, pubs, meeting new and interesting people, and the metal scene (so I imagine I'll spend quite a bit of time around Camden Market). I've never been one for bars/clubs.

I can't really think of anything else to add... hopefully that helps.

Well £450 isn't a bad amount. Gumtree.com is the Craigslist of the UK, you'll find lots of house and flat shares in the region of £100/week. You could probably get a small room, probably a single bed but pretty central for that. Move a bit further out into Zone 2 and it'll start to open up more larger double bedrooms. Note that an unlimited monthly Oyster (subway/bus) pass is £93 for Zones 1 & 2 and £109.10 for Zones 1-3.

I'd probably recommend North and North East London for you. Tufnell Park and Highgate are both nice areas on the Northern Line, pretty safe, lots of trees and parks nearby, easy access to Camden and the center of town.

Hackney is ok, cheap but not great for the tube, so you'd have to use buses. I wouldn't bother with Finsbury Park just because the tube station is a crime magnet. Islington can be very nice, but usually comes at a price.

West London is expensive and I doubt you'll be going out there much. East London is very expensive in the hipster area of Shoreditch. Bethnal Green and Mile End are pretty good. South London can be very nice for the money, but isn't really worth it IMO if you spend most of your time in North London. But Fulham, Putney and Wimbledon are all nice areas.

My advice is take a look at Gumtree and see what's available. Sometimes there are central bargains, so keep a look out.

Feel free to post here to ask about areas you've found a place in.

Yeah, I've been keeping my eye on Gumtree for the past couple of weeks. So far I haven't found many ads with a move-in date around Dec 15th, though.

Coincidentally, one promising ad I did come across is in Brixton --

-- so I'm going to toss those guys an e-mail in a bit and see if I can get more pics of the joint, info, yadda yadda. If you're curious, here's the ad: http://www.gumtree.com/london/41/31621941.html

Is Brixton a pretty decent place?

Though I think I may hold out for something north of the river... but the prospect of having my own double room is pretty fucking alluring.

ignore move in dates, that's just the date it's available from, it's still worth emailing them if the place looks worthwhile

I stayed there when I went to London about a year ago. Really nice and safe, but expensive. It's an "upper class" suburb.
P.S. Monthly Oyster Card. It will save you lots of money.

Yeah, I'm planning on getting the monthly oyster card. I still have my old one from the last time I was in London - I assume I can just fill it up or whatever.

>>82899
What's wrong with Brixton?

If I got my own room for free, I'd slurp that shit down with a smile. I don't really want to live on a couch for six months, though.
