According to ISTAT figures, there were 2,402,157 foreign citizens resident in Italy at the end of 2007. Of these a little over a half were citizens of Albania (13.2%), Morocco (12.3%), Romania (10.4%), People's Republic of China (4.7%), Ukraine (3.9%), Philippines (3.4%), Tunisia (3.3%), Pakistan (2.6%) or Republic of Macedonia (2.4%).

That's the problem with Italy
>> Italy Anonymous
I personally thought Italy was a very nice place (even in the cities). The teenagers smoke a lot but its not a problem in the big cities. And the cities were only gross in the crowded tourists spots. I found many nice secluded places in Venice that were quite nice. Plus in Venice there is Murano which is an island famous for its glass stuff. It was very pretty. The food is good and cheap if you know where to go.
And seriously, as a tourist are you really going to rent a car? They have trains that can take you anywhere and plane tickets are less than 50 euro so you shouldnt even have to worry about motorists.
Yes Italian men are flirts but hey, if your single then its pretty great and if you are with another man then they tend to leave you alone anyways.

Italy is a shithole. Only the Romanians want to live there.

I spent a month there, and people referred to me as an "Australian immigrant". They are obsessed about the issue and they think anyone they meet *must* be an immigrant, even if you are there just to study or on vacations.

The country is not even a nice place to live in.
It's a shithole. Venice is probably the only cool city.

I stayed in Rome for about a week last fall. I both loved and hated it. Rome is like a loud alcoholic lover, a rebellious daughter from an old-money family, who's abrasive and embarrassing and brutally honest, fucks like crazy, and truly makes you feel alive. I dated her for a week but will never forget her.

The tourists are annoying, and the people who serve them are annoying. I think tourist jobs go to Romans who can speak English (or German etc.) well enough but don't have the connections to get a real job. They hate their jobs, and it shows. If you look or act like a tourist, they hate you too.

It was great to able to walk into a bar and just start talking to people. If you try to do that in the US, people assume you're either a con man or a creep or just some lonely boring barfly. In Italy, people talk in bars. If they hear you're an American who can speak passable Italian, you'll have no shortage of stuff to talk about. Unlike Parisians, they're impressed by your halting Italian and flattered that you studied their language. Unless they work with tourists, in which case they hear that shit all day long.

I concur with this fellow countryman.

If you want to avoid tourist traps and the chaos of the big cities, i suggest you give Umbria a chance: you get a winning combo of nature + history, there are a ton of food specialties that ARE NOT pizza or spaghetti, people are a bit rustic but friendly, and, if you roll that way, there are lots of monasteries, abbeys, churcs and so on for improving your inner self.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbria

Speaking in general, i think the best way to visit any country is to have someone who lives there who you can ask question & tips in real time.

Ah, and speaking about another kind of tips, restaurants here DO NOT need huge tips. I've read that in america is custom to leave a tip of 15% or more, here is not. Just leave 1 euro for each person, and you'll be more than okay.

I want to agree with you, but I still think the beaches in Southern Italy are some of the most beautiful. Italians are major Euro-fags though. They are super rude and they kind of hate anybody who is not Italian especially Americans. They are major xenophobes, IMHO. They even fight about what is better Southern Italy or Northern Italy and who speaks more proper Italian. It is kind of ridiculous. I personally think most of the North is industrial and ugly plus the winters are cold, but that is just me. I prefer the South because it has less tourists, it is more laid back, and I like the warm Mediterranean atmosphere. Bottom line: Italy is a beautiful country to visit, there is good shopping, and good food. I love it more than Spain or France, but the people are not so nice. I can say this because my mother is Italian.>>40730
This man eats at Pizza Hut and Domino's.>>40073
Crime is a problem all over Italy and most of Europe. Not just Southern Italy. The whole mafia thing is exaggerated to scare off tourists. The only thing there is to worry about are Albanian pimps and hookers. I would also think that the North is a bit more dangerous because usually big cities equals more crime. Naples is pretty bad if you are going South. Bari is also pretty bad. I suggest going to Calabria if you want to visit Southern Italy. It is more rural than other places, but the scenery is beautiful. Otherwise, my favorite Italian city is Florence if you are going north into Tuscany.

I'm not a fan of Italy. The only think I liked was the food and how friendly the people are. It's dirty and graffiti everywhere. I've only been to Rome and Naples, so Northern Italy may be much nicer.

Go to Firenze, Perugia, Siena, Pisa, Bologna and Parma for the cities. Well if you go to Italy you also have to visit rome and Venice, even if they are overcrowded by tourists and overrated to some extent.
Sardegna or the south for the beaches.

Naples for trash and robbers.

Italy is GREAT, just stick to the north or center part of it (NEVER EVER south of Rome: there lies Naples, Sicily and other kind of AIDS)

Every big city in the north is rich and modern (Milan is like NY or London) , the central part of Italy has ROME, FIRENZE, BOLOGNA, ASSISI... go visit Italy, JUST SKIP NAPLES AND EVERY CITY SOUTH OF ROME!!! THERE LIES AIDS AND FAIL!!!!!!\111\11!!!!!1

Protip/TL;DR: North: European City, as London/ Paris or Great U.S. city like NY.
Center: Ancient and tourist stuff, countryside and ruins (tuscany, umbria, Rome and such)
South: Mafia, Guido/Soprano, Mammammia, Naples, Garbage, Aids, Dickheads.

Good pasta, made properly, will taste good all by itself (or with just a little salt and olive oil in the water). It's like good, fresh bread rolled into tubes (or strings or farfalle or whatever). Then when you put a good sauce on it, it turns into a bowl full of awesome. Although a good sauce can't save bad pasta, it can render it edible for emergencies.
