I feel annoying for making this thread, but yes, this is another 'I WANNA GO TO JAPAN PLZ HELP ME ANON' thread.

I can figure out travel expenses, destinations, and hotel fare through other means, but if I plan to stay in the Tokyo area for 7 to 10 days, what's a good amount of spending money to bring (in USD) if I plan on eating three meals a day and doing a decent amount of shopping/touring? I'm pretty low maintenance and wouldn't think anything of eating cheaply for a week.

Thanks in advance.

Well, luckily there's loads of cheap accomodation around the Akihabara/Ueno area.

I stayed in the Akihabara Capsule Inn for 2 weeks (lol). It was pretty awkward because of it being designed for short stays, but it was all I could afford. The staff were really great there, always up for a chat even if they don't speak English 100%. They loved the fact I was British, and the young receptionist who always wears the grey sweater is cute.

Anyway... that was 4000 yen a night. About $35 I think. There's plenty of Ramen bars and cheap places to eat around the area as well, and the japanese guys that hang around the arcades are always up for showing you around. If all else fails you can go to McDonalds.

I took about £700 for my two week stay though I ate in some nice resturants every now and again. So I'd say you'd need about half that. $800 sounds about right for spending and food. There's alot to buy.

Also, most of the hot tourist spots are free. For a good view of the city I'd check out the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Which is free, and has a nice cafe up on one of the towers. Be sure to spend some time in Shibuya for the crazy hustle and bustle and there's Asakusa Temple which is pretty much a must.

There's so much to do, and I can't remember how to spell half the names so I'll stop, but take a guide book.

P.S Make a Japanese friend for your stay. It helps alot.

This is one I met: Kyohei Yamada from Hiroshima, nice guy.

I think I'm the only 4agchanner that has no interest in going to Japan. If I was sent there, fine, but on my own dime it's quite low on the list. Just thought I'd share that with you. Enjoy your used underwear vending machines.

I never saw one of those. I did see a store called Condomania which had characters for it's condoms...

I went solely for the crazy vibe.

It's going to sound really gay, but we actually got talking in the hotel locker room when I put on the Yukata and it was miles to small for me. Then we got talking again in the public bath.

Ha, awesome, I never saw one though. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

Thanks for the help!

I was just about to mention I know absolutely no Japanese, I won't be at a disadvantage when it comes to getting around will I?

You're going to be objectified. Maybe that will bother you; maybe not.
