Because /jp/ is nothing but anime nerds, looking for people who know Tokyo pretty well Anonymous
Hey /trv/ members living in Tokyo (or who know the area pretty well)

I have a choice between living in the Ota-ku district or in Jiyugaoka in Meguro. Which is the better option? Are they both great, do they both suck, or is one obviously a better choice. I have to travel by train for an hour to my college no matter which choice I pick so I want a district that is fun or close to lots of fun things to do. I've only been to Tokyo for about 4 hours so I don't know it very well.

Why do people on 4chan call each other nerds? I've never understood this, is it supposed to be pejorative?

It's a matter of preference, but I'd prefer Jiyugaoka I suppose.

Seriously people, Kyoto is awesome.

Kyoto is boring. Osaka is superior

No, you can get it, it's just expensive and there are serious penalties (like three months in jail). Talk to the Israeli guys that hang around places like Shibuya.

From WeBeHigh's Worldwide Marijuana Travel Guide:

"if you are set on making a purchase, try going to SHIBUYA and talk to the middle-easterns standing by the corner of jewelry shop across SAKURAYA."

"You can get weed from almost any black club owner in Roppongi, slightly safer than buying from the Shibuya dealers, but still extremely risky. Prices here are more expensive, usually 5,000/6,000 yen."

"Kingston bar in roppongi, safe, ask the waitress (actually its a woman), then she will give you the stuff."

If rent difference is not an issue, then the easy choice is Jiyugaoka. Better to be closer to the circle encompassed by the Yamanote.

Also if you're ever by the JR Meguro station. That's a major "ramen war" area. Awesome ramen places lined up there. You don't have to stand in line at a hyped one for 2 hrs like the Japs but still good stuff.

Oh and for herbal, whatever you do don't be all open about it. If you get it, keep it to yourself and close friends. Be super lowkey.

Shibuya's cool and all but also remember to pick a good local bar that has a good owner and turnover and stick to it. You'll gain friends quicker. Actually there's one right next to Meguro JR station.

Lots of soul/reggae music. Cool homie with dreads runs the place. Don't expect going into pick up a bunch of kogyarus. But a good local place to have a drink, open til the last drinker is passed out, and overall people that are a bit more educated and gaijin freindly. Truly gaijin friendly not "uwaaa gaijin daaa! sugoi" BS. As long as you're not a jackass. Tiny place but it's good to have nearby.

Adding an overall suggestion. This is the same in any country you travel to, but often times foreigners mistake the Japanese timidness as being liked.

Take your time taking it all in. Be cool, calm, and collected. Watch how the Japanese react to "most" of the gaijin and don't go that route. To be honest, most aren't liked and reasonably so. Because too many act like dumbfucks especially after a few drinks.

While you're in Japan, make some close friends. Build a good network. It will help you in many ways. It's a good country with good people, and can be good for you financially (regardless where you live after) if you can break the barrier.
