Hello /trv/,
I've never really lurked travel before, hang out on the rest of 4chan. Anyways - headed to Guyana (Georgetown) for work. Going to be there 4-6 weeks. Anyone been there? Whats it like? What do I do? Only one co-workers been there. His advice in sum: "Stay in your hotel, don't go anywhere w/out security. Don't die." Not exactly encouraging. But he's old, and I'm young and adventurous . Suggestions please....

OP, there is probably a reason why that old man is old. Your choice is "young and adventurous" or "old and cautious"

Development consulting - energy infrastructure.

I like my job. Except for when I gotta go to violent places with nothing to do (West Africa). Violent places with stuff to do is cool (i.e. Pakistan, Chile).

I don't think I'll ever understand Cricket. Hit ball, run back and forth.

your explanation of cricket is pretty similar to baseball. People harp on about how complicated cricket it with its runs, overs and silly-mid offs, but at the heart of it is a rather simple, thoroughly enjoyable game. Try quick (20-20) cricket if it seems too much (Im sure they will have it).

Wasn't there some dude asking this same question like 6 months ago? Oh wait, that was Suriname, and he was a helicopter fix guy.

Well, energy infrastructure consulting, weird foreign trips. I wanna job like that. What kind of expensive degrees do I need?

I agree. I was being a little facetious. I'll try it out given the chance.

3 ways in:
1. Experience (no degree necessary)
2. Applicable degree(s) + some amount of local experience (not abroad)
3. Boat loads of charisma and somehow impress someone. Then learn it on the job.
As for the degree(s): Anything in the strong engineering, electricity, and hydro. Solar/wind people are coming on in droves. Various others...

Shitsux. Buy some bug repellent beforehand. Don't stay out at night. Do go to the food markets though. Those are always great.
