Hey /trv/

A friend and I are planning to travel around Europe for around a month, but I'm not really sure where to start with the planning, how do you, personally, do it?

We'll be wanting to stay in hostels throughout but we're not entirely sure where exactly we want to go and what we're going to do, how can you tell if a place is right from you, are there good websites for deciding these things or what?

I think i need a friend whose done this before but i have only you, anon, please share your wonderful advice.

First of all, if you want to get around you need some transportation. There is this Europe railpass which should offer the best balance of costs and mobility. Check the routes where the trains are departing and you will already have a rough sketch of your itinerary.
Well, there is a lot to see in Europe, you wont be able to cover every state on your stay here, so agree with your friend on a roundtrip and the specific countries. For example France - Netherlands - Germany - Switzerland - France.
The only thing left to do now, is go to a book store and buy some travel guides.
Read them and you will know what the countries and their cities offer you, if it's worthwhile to check out the countryside, see some nature and so on.

southern europe is much cheaper and IMO more fun. I especially like Spain and Portugal. Obviously everyone wants to check out Amsterdam, Paris etc but you can blow a LOT of money in these places, don't even get me started on Scandinavia.

a couple of tips: always ask to see a room before you stay there
check lonely planet thorn tree and wiki travel for latest news, guidebooks are often full of shit

talk to people in the country, leave your plans kind of open so you can do things you find ou about there

check festivals and try to go, they're usually fun- la tomatina, fete de bayonne for instance

try to learn some words before you get there, at the very least take a phrasebook. Euros very often can't or won't speak english.

Also, a month is really not much, if I were you I would try t to make your money last longer (camping, making food etc) and stay a little longer if money is the limiting factor
