Seconded. Also, take ALL in cash, never withdraw with various bullshit cards. Enjoy your bank surchages etc.

Also, the place is so safe its rediculious and people carry money without fear. Note that you should stay away from niggers, hustlers on the street, and gangsters if you wish to keep your money on you.

Nothing, only take your big fat and cute ass, then stay in a corner for a while.

Or maybe, if you don't have the body for prostitution, telll to your mommy that you want some money,... thounsands.

I got through with an average day budget of 4000 Yen for transport other than JR, food, sights, activities and souveniers including the compulsory visit to Akihabara.
Large amounts of cash are mostly no problem, but as always keep it close to your body - better: at two different places. 7-11 has ATMs all over the country and accepts almost everything as long as your card has a PIN, have a look at the 7-11 bank webpage. Other alternatives are the post and citybank, but I heard fees are ridiculous for the latter.
At least take enough YEN (!) with you, that you don't need to exchange money at the airport and that you can arrange a money tranfer from a family member/friend if your card doesn't work. (Note: If balance inquiry doesn't work, that doesn't mean you can't withdraw money!)

Withdrawing money from my Dutch bank account cost me €1,82 last week at a Japan Post ATM. Just withdraw large amounts at a time and bring some cash along for a start. Have a credit card ready for back up.

When I went last winter I used a visa travel card. It was really convinent using it at stores and such, and the surcharge wasnt that bad at all.
As for money uh i was there for 2 weeks, spent about $100 riding the subway and about $1500 on everything else. granted I was doing the tourist thing and buying anything i liked because I figured I probably woulnd't be coming back anytime soon and importers dont always have what you want.

Let me get this straight: Two weeks Tokyo?
I could see two weeks working in Kyoto, but in Tokyo? There isn't THAT much to see and do.

How do you spend 100 bucks for 2 weeks on the subway? This is insane.

Did you enjoy riding the JR for 5 hours everyday, or what? Even going from Akiba to Shinjuku doesn't cost you more than 130 Yen.

There is plenty in Tokyo, I lived there for a year doing an exchange program back in high school. It's a big fucking city with lots and lots, if you have a wide variety of interests.
But then again, if you are just talking about quick tourist sights, than yes, Tokyo might seem lacking. The best option is of course to get out to other cities, maybe the country for a bit.
