The schools that teach them are for the most part horrible. People that haven't used the acquisition method and have been in class for 1.5 years can barely hold a basic conversation. It's sad. The schools are basically milking them of their money and they don't know any better.

I just started by tutoring a friend of a friend locally. She'd been taking English classes for a while, but it wasn't really that fun working with her, because her comprehension level was so low. Also, she was hideous, spoke so softly it was really difficult to hear her, and kept trying to get me to come to her house. This is when i realized that teaching n00bs sucks.

I went to a school in the country that has a fairly decent language program for such a small place. Even there, the "intermediate" class wasn't exactly intermediate, but the beginners were better than most. It was fairly fun working with them, because they were all friends of a friend of mine and i hung out and partied with those kids.

So, if you get a full time job at one of the best English teaching places in the country, it pays like five times the normal salary. Half of that would go to pay your rent each month, if you didn't want to live in one of their provided apartments with some other sweaty bastards.

I interviewed for and was accepted to teach math in a private English school. However, it was a SACS accredited school and, being a science major, i didn't have any education credits. The process of enrolling in a graduate school and obtaining the credits, which is about a third of the post secondary education major here, was just too much bureaucracy and bullshit that i didn't bother. The school wouldn't provide any help with that either, so i just said fuck it, even though the job paid like eight times the average monthly salary here.

Basically, you work full time and don't get paid very well, if you're used to working a little and getting paid a lot, which i am.

I'm thinking about doing some work in Japan in a year or two. Anyone with experience have any advise?

Anyone have any experience with the former Soviet republics?

I'm probably minoring/majoring in Russian, so it could be an interesting thing to do.
