It's a lot of fun if you're careful.
Always carry a photocopy of your passport or a driver's license. You need ID but you don't want to lose your passport.
Always carry enough money to get a taxi home. If you can get a belt with a concealed zip, this is a good idea. Normal money belts will help a bit with getting pickpocketed, but most thieves know to check for them. Carry big bills hidden away and about thirty reiais in your pocket or a cheap wallet. That's enough for food etc but not so much that it will be a big loss if you get robbed. I should add, I never got robbed in over a month there, hanging out in some iffy places. Just be smart, don't walk around by yourself alone at night too much, although Ipanema is OK more or less.
Check out Lapa (on a Friday night) and Santa Teresa, go to a funk party, go to a samba school, fuck some hookers from Help if you want, eat churrasco, go to the football, have fun!
check http://www.bealocal.com/tours.html the favela tour is interesting, and it's good to go to the soccer with these guys because you'll be with a group and your transport is organised. Brazilian soccer games can get a little bit crazy.
