Alright /trv/, I need some help.

I'm looking at moving to New York, Staten Island specifically, to take a job at a local college. Here's the thing. The college is on Staten Island and it's pretty centrally located, but I'm from Cincinnasty and really have no realistic view of the city other than that there's a toll to cross every bridge off the island. I'm fresh out of college, and I don't have any debt (thank God) but I don't have any money either. I figure by the time I'm ready to move up there, I'll have enough to put down a security deposit and first month's rent on a cheap apartment (~$1800), but beyond that, I'll be stealing food and sleeping on the floor until I get my first pay check. So here's what I want to know.

1) What are some positives and negatives about living on Staten Island?
2) If not Staten Island, then Southwestern Brooklyn or Northeastern New Jersey?
3) How expensive is it to live on Staten Island (utilities, internet, gas prices, etc)?

Pic slightly related as that's how I felt when I got the job.

Hoboken and Jersey City are a hell of a lot cheaper than any of the "actual" boroughs.

Just a word of advice before you move to Staten Island:

Mentally prepare yourself for the smell. It's not New Jersey, it's the fucking landfill. It stinks all the time. You will eventually learn to ignore it, but for the first few months more or less, you are going to be aware that the air just fucking stinks. Again, you are going to be on an island with the biggest landfill ever. It smells awful and you'll really reconsider that job until you realize that Brooklyn is 20 minutes away and you can actually get off the fucking island.
