>Colombia has suffered from a terrible reputation as a dangerous and violent country and it is. However, in the last few years safety has improved in a certain way. Colombia has the highest rate of kidnappings in the world. Colombia is relatively safe compared with the Congo or Iraq, but keep an eye on your surroundings. Tourists will face problems if they decide just to fool around in cities. Of course it pays to think safe, just as you would in any other large metropolitan city and even more so here because of the extra violence factor of the guerrillas. To discover the forest, ask somebody to stay with you. Walk relatively free during the day, but during night take precautions and from time to time observe who's around you. Normally the people who steal look awful, so be cautious when a stranger who looks messy come near you!

Anyone ever been to Colombia before? Hot chicks and nice weather/beaches, but it sounds like a dangerous shit-hole full of moral-less scum. Are the stereotypes true?

Depends where you go. My family's from the coast, so I've only been there, and it's pretty okay. I mean, there are still tons of poor people, but the begging, etc, is about par for the course in other third world countries, and I never felt bodily threatened.

From what I've heard, Colombia is about as dangerous as Kenya. Take that as you will.

Its not that dangerous. In the rural areas where the rebels and criminals and the fascists that hunt them hang out, its extremely dangerous.

If you stay in the cities, its no more dangerous then any other iron-fisted latin american nation.

Its really not that bad... just don't wonder into the slums shit-faced drunk at night with a wad of American 20$ bills sticking out of your shirt pocket.

A guide or friend there can steer you away from the tourist-traps and places teeming with FARC soldiers, ect.

I'd let her kidnap me.

Colombia is not dangerous. Inter-city travel is hit and miss but generally it's okay. I know because I contemplated living there for a while myself and researched it a bit. There is a civil war going on there at the moment, but the only people who notice are the hardcases hiding in the jungle.

Go to Brazil FTW, they have hot women and it is a little bit dangerous if you go in to the poorer areas, so it's a perfect mix of fun.
