I was in Cyprus and United Arab Emirates about 2 years ago, Cyprus is great UAE is too urban/desert(not much in between) for me though

Been to Syria and Lebanon.

People in Syria are surprisingly friendly, though I heard people to the east in the desert near the border with Iraq are a bit xenophobic. Its a feast for people that love historical sites. Haleb (Allepo) is definately the most interesting city.
Awesome food.

Lebanon feels a bit like a military zone, but the people are also friendly, though less than in Syria. Prices are high, but places like Jbayl and Baalbeck are worth a visit.

No problems getting a visa at the border of either. (Dutch citizen, don't know if it's the same for other countries)
