Are there really as many slums as they say?

i knew someone in brazil who said certain parts are very dangerous because of the drug trade and police don't care

is this true? if so where?

Yes. Actually, there´s a lot more than they say.
But, a few are on Rio de Janeiro, and most of them are on the northeast of the country.

how much is it to get a 12 year old prostitute?

I am not totally sure about that, but, you might as well not get close to Colombia neither to a few regions in Rio de Janeiro, althrough that city is spetacular and most places are safe, contrary to popular belief where they say you can get shot even if you´re home.

Also, the police actually cares, but, i don´t think the transit around here is good enough to allow drug raids and so on.

Also, most cities that are on the interior seem to be quite calm and nothing like that happens over there.

You don´t need to pay for something like that. Just look like a nice guy, and, follow the steps many on wikichan or ED did

Also, if you want to get laid here, buy a good car. That´s more than enough, even if you´re a fat fuck or a animu expert.

Brazillian here.

About the drug trade... well, it exists anywhere. It is really dangerous, I won't lie to you. You just need to learn the places you mustn't visit. Example: anywhere near the slums in Rio. I've lived in Rio de Janeiro's state rural area until I was 14 and nothing ever happened to me.

If you're going to visit the country, I recommend you the southern region. It doesn't look like the idea that 80% of the foreigners have of the country. Just stay away from Florianopolis (capital of Santa Catarina) - beautiful beaches doesn't pay for the extremely arrogant local elite.

Btw, OP's pic is in Curitiba (Francisca Maria Garfunkel Riechbieter Bothanic Garden, more precisely), the capital of the state of Paraná (one of the 3 states of the south).

Rio de Janeiro is a shitty place, but it's safer than most people think it is as long as you manage to stay on the rich areas (Copacabana beach, Urca, etc).

The brazilian countryside is a good place to travel. Lots of different and beautiful places to visit, the chicks look good and they fuck anyone with a penis, I kid you not. Specially if you're a foreigner.

Also, it´s where i am living for a while, if that matters for anyone here.

So, any questions?

A friend kept on complaining to me about how his shoes kept on getting stolen, popular game for kids there? To steal shoes? I kind of thought he was joking but he kept bringing it up..

I heard it´s pretty commom, but, it never happened to me... probally because i don´t wear those shinny "kicks" that skaters use for maximum confort.
I always stick up with mocassins and sandals.

Oh well. I´ll be back in a few hours. Leave a few questions and i´ll gladly answer you back.

Later!

Did the kids actually play CS1.6 as much as I've heard?

The government banned it.
At least that's what I heard in /v/

>>1226
Yes, that's why I said "did"
>> Anonymous
>>1229
Oh..

As far as I know they banned it because it looked too similar to the real life conflict between their military police and the slum druglords.

>1234 GET

It was banned because of a specific custom map that mimicked a slum, I think. However it's still played for no brazilian obtains original copies of software, ever.

The CITY isn't bad at all. The native people spoil it. Some people in there have bumber stickers where you can read "Welcome to Florianópolis, don't forget to go away" in portuguese.

Brazil needs some serious social reform.
Too much social inequality, very few rich people and a vast majority living in really miserable conditions.

Not my kind of place...

My brother is moving to Brazil this year. He hasn't done much research, he just likes what he knows about the culture. He says he's moving to Sao Paulo.

I want to know how safe he will be, and how do native Brazillians treat foreigners?

Like any other huge metropolitan center, São Paulo has problems with criminality. The key, like in Rio de Janeiro, is to avoid the wrong places. If he does that, he'll feel like home in a few days.
We get along pretty well with foreigners. I've studied with an american and a half-german. Of course, some people are a little bit close-minded, but that's something you will find anywhere in the world. The people of São Paulo is not as receptible as Rio's, but it's just a matter of time until they accept someone.

Oh, the city is very polluted, so if he's got something like asthma or bronchitis, tell him to get ready to spend some serious money with medicines.

>>1676

Sounds good. I'll tell him about Sao Paulo vs Rio in terms of acceptability. He will be working as a musician, so might that make his foreigness more paletable and acceptable?

How is Rio for pollution? My brother and I both have respitory problems so that will be worth looking into.

I don't want to be an asshole, but I would advise your brother to reconsider his trip. Rio and Sao Paulo have one of the highest murder rates in the world.

If he likes the "Brazilian lifestyle", he can always try small elite cities in the interior of the country, but I'd advise against it. And before you bitch, I've been to Brazil more than 6 times on bussiness and vacations, I know the country. It's very nice, but I would not live there, let alone try to make a living "playing the guitar".

Pic related is Sao Paulo. Try to talk some sense into your brother.

I think the people in the musical area won't complain. The cultural scene of São Paulo is pretty rich, he'll probably meet lots of people from other countries, if he's lucky. =)

About the pollution in Rio, it's not as polluted as São Paulo. In São Paulo, you can FEEL the difference in the air. It's awful, i've spent 5 days in there in 2006 and it was awful to walk just for 10 minutes. In Rio, you'll probably read in a newspaper os see in the TV that some beaches might be closed due the pollution levels or some weird algae bloom, but it's rare, i guess. About the air, it's far more breathable than São Paulo's.

What makes you think I'm going to bitch? I'm looking for advice, hence I want to hear if something's a bad idea.

How many of those murders are against foreigners? Where do the murders tend to take place?

Btw he won't just be playing guitar on street corners, he's a brilliant musician and I'm eternally jealous of his talent. It's hard to make it as a musician anywhere, but from what he has read it's easier to make a living as a musician in Brazil than it is Britain. Culturally there is just a lot more respect for jazz in Brazil than there is here.

The crime rate is something that I worry about a lot. He's the kind of person who walks through dangerous areas in cities at night thinking 'it won't happen to me'. Whether it's because he's green or because he's secretly suicidal I don't know. Any more information on the specifics of crime and murder in Rio or Sao Paulo will be useful, eg are murders usually commited because of gang warfare, is it racial attacks, do many innocents get killed etc.

I know I could look this up somewhere else but I saw the thread on here so I thought I'd give it a go.

>>1704

Thanks that's useful information.

The key for not being robbed/mugger/whatever is smething that works universally: don't walk around using things that look expensive. Take care in the traffic lights, especially in the night. If someone points a gun at you, don't even think about going Chuck Norris up the bandit's ass, he'll hurt or even kill you. NEVER walk alone in the street in the night. Being with a group of 4 or more people is always safer. I don't want to scare you, but it's something useful to know.
