Anyone here suffer from fear of flying? How severe is it? How do you deal with it? Post your experiences here.

Flying is safer than going by car. I know it's easier said than done, but just think about that and fight that fear.

I never really had a problem with flying. A bit of anxiety my first few times but now I find it almost fun/exciting

When I was a kid/in my teens I never had a problem with flying. Been on several cross-Atlantic flights with no issues whatsoever. I haven't flown for about 5 years now, and for some reason I have developed some kind of anxiety around it... it's like, I'm more afraid of getting an anxiety attack mid-flight than I am of the actual technicalities of flying. Strange. When I go flying again I'll probably have to take some sedatives or something, above all for the placebo effect.

My girlfriend and her entire family (sisters, brother, and mother) are horrified of flying.

In their family, they don't know anyone aside from me that's even been on a plane. They said they've always been skeptical, and I feel as though they are so afraid from a combination of negative and horrifying stories, the fact that it's so high in the air, and that you have no control over anything should something go wrong.

When confronted with other such fears comparable to this one, my girlfriend will completely mentally break down, cry, and do anything to get out.

In an attempt to get her over it, I'm simply going to force her on a plane. I'm going to do three flights, the first a nice and semi-short trip to somewhere close to show how smooth it can be. The next one I'll intentionally aim for a rough ride, hopefully during a storm sometime, to show her that rides can be rough but still safe. And then yet another calm and smooth ride, and hopefully I can make it a long trip.

I can't predict turbulence, but meteorologists can predict storms. I hope it works well, we'll be doing it within the year.

I've never had a problem with planes. I'm perfectly content to be in a car, so why not a plane? You hear all these horror stories about crashes and whatnot, but then when you think of it in proportion to the number of flights that go perfectly they're safer than cars.

Don't forget to check out the Japan Airlines Flight 123 CVR

I get midly scared with those small propeller planes that I had to take from like Pittsburgh or Cincinnati to Lexington,KY. The plane jumps and the noise from the propeller just unnerve me.

Though the bigger planes don't bother me.

Ugh. A little bit. I used to be really scared of flying, especially with my fear of heights. However, I'm a bit of a jet-setter so I've become accustomed to being 42, 000 feet above sea level.

This doesn't mean turbulance doesn't give me the willies...

i think if something happened, i'd be fucking freaked out, but like, flying itself doesn't bother me. i don't like 14 hour plane rides, but that's not so much a fear of flying as a 'god i hate being in a flying tin can for 14 hours' thing.

I thought I had a fear of flying, but every time do fly I'm perfectly fine.
>> Anonymous
Not a fear, but I really dislike flying, and find it rather unpleasant.

I used to be just fine with flying. And actually really look forward to it. Then one day I was on a flight from Chicago to Vancouver and shortly after takeoff the engine just outside my window exploded. Emergency landing. Scary shit. Ever since then I get really stressed out about flying. Every little bump or rough takeoff/landing I have to mentally prepare myself to die.

Fun times!

I HATE FLYING AND TAKE SHITLOADS OF XANAX HOURS IN ADVANCE BECAUASE I COULD NOT GET ON PLANE OTHERWISE. OH YEAH, IT ALSO HARD TO FLY ALONE BECAUSE OF XANAX COMA. I GUESS IF THE PLANE CRASHES THOUGH I WONT SUFFER?
>> Anonymous
I like to fly on planes, mostly because I love turbulence. The only thing I don't like is the smell.
>> Anonymous
Love flying.
>> Anonymous
I like flying, it's kinda exciting.

And i'm safe in the knowledge that it would be a pretty thrilling and cool death should something go wrong
>> Anonymous
I fucking love planes. There's always a nagging feeling in the back of my head that OH SHIT THIS PLANE IS GOING TO FUCKING CRASH OR GET HIJACKED, but I push it to the very back of my mind and try to focus on something else. Like the in-flight movie.

How the fuck can one be afraid of flying?

It's so much safer than a car, it's ridiculous, and yet you drive without complaint.

>I'm simply going to force her on a plane.

That's a really stupid idea.

I have no fear of flying, but i was incredibly pissed off at a pilot once. i was flying into Las Vegas and we were about to land when at about 20 meters off the ground the pilot takes back off into the air. he made up some bullshit excuse saying it would be hard to land with too much extra fuel so we would fly around an extra mile and come back, then about 5 minutes before we landed, we heard the landing gear go down, for the first time. Asshole pilot almost crashed us into the pavement the first time.

That's why we spend extra for different airlines

So you don't get stuck with the rookie who will end up killing 500 people in 4 secs because of a fucking landing gear or turbulence problem

I fucking loved the first time i flew.
I enjoyed the second time.
I slept through the take-off the third time, i guess the effect wore off.

I don't mind flying as long as I'm the one doing the flying.

For instance I have an old biplane that I fly sometimes. Granted, I only take off from a grassy field and land on the same place, but I absolutely love it. There really is nothing quite like taking a plane up by yourself and being completely alone in the sky. As long as I'm in control, I have nothing to fear (so long as I made sure to service the plane properly).

Now, as for commercial airlines, can't say I like them too much. It's more of an unpleasant necessity than anything else.

Ahahaha, this is the worst fucking plan ever. While her fears aren't justified, it's still an utterly terrible idea to force someone into what they'd consider their worst nightmare and then try to explain it away as "well you have to face your fears durr".
