The torch-run is suppose to have the torch run from Greece to the site of the Olympics. This symbolizes the fact that human power, agility, and dexterity is used to compete in the games. However this year they simply put the torch on a plane and fly it around from major city to major city. That says a lot I think.

They were originally supposed to start in the big Buddhist temple in Nagano, but the temple declined because of concerns over human rights in Tibet and safety of the temple.

It is now supposed to start in an empty lot owned by the city about 800m away from the temple.

TOKYO: A centuries-old Buddhist temple in Japan was spray-painted with graffiti early Sunday, days after temple officials pulled out of the upcoming Olympic torch relay because they sympathize with Tibetan protesters.

The graffiti — consisting of white circular patterns and lines — was found Sunday morning in six spots in the main hall at Zenkoji Temple in the city of Nagano, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.

Nagano police were investigating whether the vandalism was related to the decision to pull out of the Olympic torch relay.

A police spokesman said he couldn't provide further details. He refused to give his name because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media.

Zenkoji had been slated as the starting point for Japan's leg of the relay on April 26. Temple officials, however, withdrew on Friday citing security concerns and sympathy for Tibetan protesters facing a Chinese crackdown.

Since the torch relay started in Greece on March 24 it has been a magnet for critics of China's human rights record and its crackdown in Tibet on sometimes-violent demonstrations against Chinese rule. Protesters disrupted the torch's stops in London, Paris and San Francisco.

The grounds at Zenkoji, built in the 7th century, are open 24 hours a day.

I never used to be a fan of Japan, but I stumbled on a guy on Youtube who did really interesting cultural videos of events around Japan.

Now I'm dead set on doing a two week biking excursion there. I'm a endurance cyclist and I think biking is the best way to connect with the land around you. I've heard that the roads in Japan are a lot of inclines, and I'm fine with that.

So my question is... What would be the best route for a cyclist to take to really get a good feel for the country? I was thinking of landing in Tokyo, stopping through Kyoto, ending in Hiroshima, and stopping at as many small towns, beaches, temples, etc as I can along the way.

I'm just in the preliminary planning stages of this trip, so I'm interested in feedback.
