The Canadian formerly known as an Edmontonian
Oh Alberta, the Texas of Canada ^_^ Anyways, I guess I could tell you about Edmonton since I pretty much grew up there.
Now, since you asked about gas prices, I'll assume you have a car, which is really awesome in Edmonton because you need a car to go anywhere pretty much.
Bums downtown are mostly harmless. They'll just try to give you a crappy mag or something.
Bus system, if you have to use it, is pretty easy to figure out. The trip planner on the ETS website (http://www.takeets.com/) is fucking awesome.
Streets are all on a grid system, with streets running north and south and avenues running east and west. The further north you go, the higher the avenue number, and the further west you go, the higher the street number. And to find a nearby intersection from a street address, well, here's an example:
1249 67th street
You have the street. Now to get the avenue you just take away the last two digits so that you have 12th Ave. As for streets in Mill Woods, I just used google maps, because it was waaaay too wierd for me :S
The ravine is awesome and big, but then you'll hear of foxes and stuff in the fall. Meh, whatevs.
There's always potholes.
West Edmonton Mall gets really, really lame if you live by it too long, but sometimes there's just nothing better to do.
If you're going to Whyte Ave., just take the bus. If you're going downtown during a festival, just take the bus. Much easier, I found.
And avoid the area around Kingsway mall at night. I even felt safer at Jasper Place :S
So yeah, that's all I can think of for now. I'll probably be back soon with more fun stuff.

Kudos mon gars. I moved to Montréal, and it's awesome en câline :D
Oh yeah, and the Franco-Albertans pretty much chased me out of Alberta with torches for speaking like a Québécois, haha.
