If you go to the park at 4-6 am, there's usually no one manning the front gate where you pay at and you can get in for free. It gets pretty cold at night though, my friends and I learned that the hard way, we had to wait for hours in my car before the shops opened at 7 am so we could buy jackets. Bring your own supplies, everything there is ridiculously expensive (ex: the McDonalds in the town just outside the park is the second most expensive in the entire world). If you want to go down to the bottom of the canyon, just pay for the mule ride because you do NOT want to walk down that damn path for hours constantly stepping over mule shit.
If you hike along the rim, you can get out far on the edge of the canyon and take some pretty bitchin' pictures. Make sure you wear thick soled boots, though, thin-soled shoes will have your feet in horrible pain after a few hours from constantly stepping on rocks. Oh, and if you decide to go to the gift shop, don't buy the beer mug, it's way too thin and breaks easily.
