Me and my friends are planning to backpack through Europe. We live in the US.

What do you think is a good amount of time to spend there, how much money should I expect to spend (keeping in mind we are doing the hostel thing, and getting cheap food, no expensive restaurants) and what are some significant cities we should see that aren't the mainstream, boring ones.

Keep in mind we prefer Historical value over stuff like clubs and beaches.

Somewhat difficult question. The backpacking scene is western Europe has long been compromised into richie rich tourism. Its not cheap. In fact, arriving in many Western European towns and trying to find a room may set you back far more than the local Super 8 if you be amerifag.

You can still do an interesting trip in near east europe on a budget, maybe start in Prague and move slowly up to Poland using trains or buses. Try to meet young people and crash at their place. Try to find rooms in homes. Its not easy on a budget anywhere in Europe but eastern Europe at least gives you a chance.

take at least 3 months, more if you can.

you can get by pretty well on 60 euros a day, thats with a mix of eating out/supermarkets and hostels/1-star hotels. if youre reallly on a budget you can spend less by staying in the same region as travel costs are what kill you really.

having said that, dont limit yourself and see as much as you can
