I'm trying to go to Belarus over the summer. I've heard they're lame about visas. Any information about getting a visa?

Any suggestions on what to see?

Why are you going to Belarus? It's like Russia, only worse.

The girls in Minsk are beautiful. Tell them you're a rich American. A lot of them are just waiting to jump on a golden dick.

Because, as an act of vengeance and a general insult against the Russian government, the Belorussians ditched the Russian Ruble and peg their currency to the U.S. dollar instead.

Now, when Putin puts guns to his citizens’ heads and tells them to stop using the word “dollar” (look it up, it’s true), they’ll cash in their dollars in Belarus and not Hong Kong. The Kremlin basically told their followers to give their money to the people they hate.

The Belorussians are hardly Soviet loyalists. On the contrary, they hate the old Soviet way. They hate the KGB. They hate Putin. And now they’re waging economic war against Russia.

Is that why they're so close to becoming a united state?

I wondered about that, too.

The Belarussian secret service is still called the KGB. The Belarus flag and coat of arms are virtually identical to their soviet counterparts. learn2history

So the white, red and white one they had before this one they adopted after the Soviet Union fell? And then they went back to the pre-fall one? Interesting.

I'm visiting a friend I knew from a foreign exchange student program. I've heard it's pretty cheap especially outside of Minsk.

The government is pretty wacko. Lukashenko is sort of a wannabe Brezhnev. Belarus is pretty close with Russia compared to the other ex Soviet republics.
>> Belavezhskaya Puscha Bocket
Belavezhskaya Puscha is the last remaining primeval forest left in Europe. Amazing place, gigantic oaks with moss hanging from the branches, wisents (european bison), deer, bears etc. Picture the big forests from lord of the rings and you're not far of.

Belavezhskaya Puscha is on the border between Poland and Belarus, the Belarus side is supposedly much nicer though because Poland is busy cutting the forest down for lumber from their end.

That said the forest is the only reason I could think of for going to Belarus. And I gave up due to the whole visa thing and the fact that Belarus is apparantly still on the watchlist for countries that routinely violate human rights. (although I'm not sure why since I mostly looked into the forest, not the rest of the country)

and is it any surprise? they belong to the east slavic ethnic group (which you can basically think of as three varieties of russians)
belarus literally means white rus or white russia.

Oh I wasn't really surprised. I just don't know the specifics. I'm kinda curious though, if not for the forest, why else would someone go to Belarus.

If it's cheap, eastern european culture you're looking for there's easier and safer places than Belarus.

Actually it's the other way around. In fact, the vast majority of the Polish side is under strict protection (many areas are even completely off limits to the public) while the Belarusian side has little or no protection and is actively logging there.
Even if the Polish side ever chose to relax or completely reverse their restrictions on logging, access and other protections European Union regulations will no longer allow it.

It's a truly enchanted place. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Looks beautiful in that picture. Interesting about the logging. I ended up not going because of the visa thing on the Belarus side and the logging thing I was told about on the Polish side.

Maybe I should look into it again, I'd still really love to go and it's within (long range) driving distance.
