Okay, as for accomodation, try the YHA's if your okay with dorm rooms, cheap as and they usually aren't too bad. All over australia as well.
Aussie myself, as for the real australia being dead, well... same as the cities, depends what your into really, went out to lightening ridge earlier in NSW (used to be opal mining centre, they still mine 50km away from there) yeah, it's a little bland if you want nightlife but if your travelling, tends to be a little bit down the list. See a few odd things and meet some interesting people, much the same as the cities.
Also cairns seems to be off your list go and see the reef is absolutely awesome, huge amount of coral bleaching in some parts unfortunately so go see it whilst there's still colourful and lively. Go and see the rainforest whilst your there too.
I'm biased as its my country of origin but there's certainly a fair bit to explore, but the cities are only as interesting as the people to me, and there's only so many galleries and museums to see and i've grown up in those cities too.
