All right /trv, I come to you in dire need of assistance.

I've got a research trip planned for Australia this summer, and I'll be in at least 4 cities. Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Darwin are on the list.

Anything I should be aware of before I leave? Got a recommendation on a hostel? Places to eat? Sights I should see on my days off? Basic shit that I might not know besides the blatantly obvious stuff (power plugs, currency changing, etc)?

I'm all ears, guys.

Why Darwin?

Going to hit up the archives in Sydney and Melbourne.

Canberra has the War Memorial archives, so that's a must.

Darwin is a must because the research topic involves Darwin's role in WWII, so archives and foreign legion halls are on my list.

I'll be in the country for several months, so I was thinking of using trains to get between cities. I'm in no gigantic hurry.

Sounds like an interesting trip! You'll have no problems travelling between Syd, Mel and Can by train but getting to Darwin by train might be a bit of a stretch.

You can start out at Sydney then head south to Canberra and Melbourne. Then go west to Adelaide and take The Ghan straight up to Darwin (3,000 km journey).

Alternatively you could go the opposite way.ie: Start in Melbourne, head north through Canberra and Sydney and then head further north through QLD (Brisbane was the Allied HQ in WW2, they might have some interesting stuff there) and end up in Darwin that way.

Tourism is a big industry in Australia so you won't have a problem getting around and finding places to eat/sleep.

Fuck Darwin, go see Tasmania.

stop in sydney for a while, go to a pub, notice that it is wall to wall poker machines, blow all your cash there.

Go to canberra enjoy the war memorial and find that the rest of the place is dead

Darwin go to the local woolworths and find abo's pissing on the floor

Melbourne is alrite from what I have seen of it (was only there for 4 days) go to phillip island and see some cute little penguins, also decent nightlife in melbourne but also some faggotry as it tries to be some edgy, fashionable place

No place is perfect, really. I don't expect to land in a place of sunshine and flowers, but rather another corner of the world with plenty of the same old shit (re. social problems, tourist traps, etc), and some pleasant surprises.

Why the fuck do people never go to WA?! I should be glad actually. But it's a stunning state. Esperance, Margaret River, Kalgoorlie, Perth, Broome... etc etc

Capital Cities of Australia:
Darwin - A tropical hole. Other than that, fine.
Brisbane - Still pretty tropical. A tourist trap. Other than that, fine.
Sydney - Full of assholes. Other than that, fine.
Melbourne - Full of stuck up assholes. Other than that, fine.
Adelaide - So many churches we have to kill people. Other than that, fine.
Hobart - Bit of a backwater. We're not really sure if it's part of Australia.
Auckland - Same as Hobart. They're kind of not really part of Australia.
Perth - Like Melbourne, full of fashionable assholes, except the weather is a bit hotter and there's less random rain.
Canberra - They're not really a city. We just plonked our capital there to stop Melbourne and Sydney from squabbling over who is better. If you like governments, Canberra is okay. If you don't, then give 'em a miss.

You clearly know nothing
Auckland is not even in Australia
Not by a long shot

Enjoy your sand lol
Hopefully they use all the mining money to do something about Perth rather than just make everything more expensive and still with nothing to do there

Okay, as for accomodation, try the YHA's if your okay with dorm rooms, cheap as and they usually aren't too bad. All over australia as well.

Aussie myself, as for the real australia being dead, well... same as the cities, depends what your into really, went out to lightening ridge earlier in NSW (used to be opal mining centre, they still mine 50km away from there) yeah, it's a little bland if you want nightlife but if your travelling, tends to be a little bit down the list. See a few odd things and meet some interesting people, much the same as the cities.

Also cairns seems to be off your list go and see the reef is absolutely awesome, huge amount of coral bleaching in some parts unfortunately so go see it whilst there's still colourful and lively. Go and see the rainforest whilst your there too.

I'm biased as its my country of origin but there's certainly a fair bit to explore, but the cities are only as interesting as the people to me, and there's only so many galleries and museums to see and i've grown up in those cities too.

The city has an enormous fashion industry, and historically was one of the world's largest textile centres.

Canberra may be a failure as a city, but it does host a lot of the mueseums, libraries, collections, etc. War stuff especially.

You need to go to South West Sydney. Places like Liverpool and Fairfield are great.

Also try, Lebkemba, Auburn, Redfern and Ashfield

once again, obviously you have seen fuck all of WA

OP, Southern Western Australia you will find places like Margaret RIver which has globally known wines and also has a lot of cheese and a chocolate place, MG is also known for it's surf. Augusta has a lot of caves where you can go for caving tours which when i went were great. Pemberton though small houses the tingle forrests and the tree top walk. Kalgoorlie is in the desert but is also where the Gold Rush pretty much occured. Esperance has beaches that were like, voted in the top 6 in the world or something. Further north you have Broome which albeit hot has a few different things to look at including cable beach. Ningaloo reef is amazing, you can even swim with whale sharks there. And perth is a small city but it has a decent night life and Kings park is nice. The river holds the red bull air race sometimes as well. There are a few galleries and such around as well.

Australia really needs to consign this myth to the bin. Something like 70 per cent of abos live in metro Syd.

Perth is the only settlement in the whole of WA with more than 10 people...

It's ridiculous, you've got a state the size of europe and everyone crowded into one little city in the middle of nowhere.

Perth? I spent a month there one week. So parochial. Everything is the fault of the "eastern states". There are "Buy West Australian Made" tags on the clothes in shops.
Swan River was full of jellyfish and the heat was unbearable.
Street lights are turned off at 9:00PM.
