Hey /trv/. Does the rest of the world still see us Kentuckians as nothing but in-bred hillbillies or has it changed to "Uh... is that where KFC comes from?" I have yet to tell someone I'm from Louisville when I travel to know for myself, for I am scared.

Sometimes I forget that Kentucky is even a place. You're on the edge of the universe between obscurity and the Southern United States. Therefore you must embody everything that it is to be a southerner. So when we think of Kentucky, we may think of Bourbon, Fried Chicken, and your numerous colonels. But most of all we see you as the savage hillbilly on the cusp of the civilized world.

Kentucky Derby and bourbon come from you.

Also, Hunter S. Thompson.

I am from West KY. Most of the US forgets we exist, let alone think we're hillbillies.

Funny thing is, Kentucky is one of the least redneck southern states. We have plenty of rednecks here in KY but TN, MI, AL, GA, etc are all worse.

I'd say TN is the worst by far.

How the fuck do you figure that? Mississippi, West Virginia, and Arkansas are FAR WORSE than Tennessee.

Ok, OP here. Let me ask you a question. How does the rest of Kentucky see Louisville? Are we pompous dickheads who get too much money from the government to change Spaghetti Junction again or something?

KYfag here with broad experience -- born in Lexington, lived in Perry and Pike Counties (hillbilly country) as well as Louisville -- since then many other states and now in California.

My experience is that most of the rest of Kentucky thinks that Louisville is where there are too many liberals who hate Jesus and like killing babies. And, while I agree that KY is better than all of the other southern states when it comes to the overbearing redneck factor, there are just too many "black folks on welfare" in Louisville for their liking.

However, that's just what I'll call the group mentality. I took a driving trip across every region of Kentucky last year with a CA license plate and having long ago lost my hillbilly accent. Yet, 99.9% of the strangers I encountered were just as friendly and open-minded as one could be. One-one one, I find Kentuckians to be generally good, forgiving folks regardless of their monetary or educational status. And, they all know that they are cursed with the most corrupt and incompetent state governments outside of Louisiana.

If they are bitching a lot about Louisville getting money for Spaghetti Junction and the bridge mess, they would be better served to instead stop that ultimate in useless pork barrel spending known as I-66 and just expand KY-80 where its needed.

tl;dr - Muhammad Ali is from Louisville, Kentucky, and he was the greatest!

Do you think of people out West as being cold and souless despite their more liberal bent? Because that's sort of the impression I got.

I'm not sure if you mean that's your own experience or the impression you got from what I wrote. Either way...

In general, I would not say that about the "West," and I wouldn't say it's because of any political leanings. But, I must admit that I find a lot of the people in the major population centers of California to be unfriendly and self-centered compared to my experiences in Kentucky, Colorado, and others. And, I would say that's true for both the "red" areas like Orange and San Bernardino Counties as well as the "blue" ones like Los Angeles and the northern coast.

YMMV, and every place has cool people and total asstards. Perhaps your personality type blends differently. I am just giving my honest opinion along with the credentials I gave above. Of course, I see the world through eyes that are on 4chan a lot, including /b/, so maybe you should take over 9000 grains of salt with anything that I say...lol.

Lagrange fag here,
It's not too bad when you go out of state and tell people where you are from, some people know Louisville from college basketball and football (with sportsfags, at least).
When I was Chicago last time, I actually had someone ask me about Waverly Hills, which was odd coming from someone who never stepped foot here.
I will say that I think that Kentucky is the Albania of the US, everyone tends to forget that we are even here.

Partially related question: how bad is Alabama for the hillbillies? I thought it was supposed to be one of the worst states for that sort of thing, but no real mention of it yet in this thread.

From my experience I had simply noticed that, somewhat surprisingly, people out West, particularlly in Washington, seemed a bit more distant and less friendly, even to one another, than compared to people in the Midwest. I saw it almost as a sort of Indepent, I do my own thing, get out of my way, compared to a We're a community, let's help each other out, mentality in the MW. Of course a lot of depends on whether or not you're an "outsider" I'm sure. And people all over the world can be assholes, but on the whole, it was sort of something I noticed. And it seemed odd, given the more liberal bent out west. You'd almost think they'd be more welcoming.

Alabamafag here. Hillbillies? Not so much, really. Appalachia's only in the northeast corner of the state. We tend to have people more along the line of rednecks (yup, there's a difference) and, in the southern part of the state, the whites are more Old South wannabe gentile-types. Still kind of hickish though, and very socially backward. I think the city of Montgomery was never told that the 1950's has come and gone (or the 1850's, for that matter).
