What should I do in Hong Kong?

I have about 8 days left, give me some recommendations. I can pass for local (am Canadian-born Chinese capable of speaking fluent Cantonese), so I'm not afraid to go outside the normal tourist areas.

Maybe some of the Outlying Islands?

I think you should extend your trip.

Permanently.

Fuck around on Lantau Island's beaches... hike there too.

I'd like to, and I do have a HK ID card, so I could cancel my flight home and stay here indefinitely with relatives. However, I'd get pwned by the public schooling system, and international schools are ridiculously expensive.

going to lantau is good, its about a 1 hr hike between the 2 harbours. While there, eat some seafood.

Hit up Sham Shui Po for some street markets and the street with all those toy outlets, you can find some cheap stuff there.

I guess you've been to the shopping places in HK, CWB, Mong Kok, APM@Kwun Tong, Citygate@Tung Chung, etc etc...

Sai kung for chinese style BBQ if you have family that can get there with you. But it may be too dam hot to do it now (it was too dam hot for me in july to do it).

To be honest, I actually haven't been to all the big malls. I've spent a fair amount of time in Sham Shui Po comparing prices @ Golden shopping center, and bought some knockoff headphones at Apliu Street.

I've already been to Sai Kung too, but it wasn't that great. Spent ~5 hours on a boat at night trying to catch squid (?) Not sure if it's actually squid, it's "muk yue" (try trasnlating "ink fish" mentally, that's what it's called) but got nothing (we heard the boat next to us playing mahjong... that's when we gave up.)

Might take your recommendation and go to Lantau by myself. Also might go to HKU for a short tour if I can get in touch with the right people...

There's always the option of taking a short trip to Guangzhou (unless you can't get a visa on short notice).

Same poster here.
Hit up some of the malls, very different from american malls, if you are short on time, definitely hit up Times Square in CWB for all your fashion needs, and Citygate@tung chung for cheap outlet store stuff (if you like esprit, the outlet there is a gold mine). You will also find some high class brands there with good prices.

Acutally, have you taken teh star ferry across from Central to TST? (actually where are you living?) It's cheap, it's like $2.20 for top deck for a 15 minute boat ride. Then walk around harbour city at TST, it's right at the dock where you land. That mall is full of luxury brands. TST will also contain many stores for shopping, a good mall to go to there is silvercord (google this for directions).

I doubt OP has the right docs for going across to mainland, tbh, I have not been across but i've been told there is nothing there to see unless u want some cheap hookers or fake stuff and foot massages.

Have you been to the peak? When I say peak, I mean ALL the way up, not where the peak tram stops at that "the peak" mall. It's gorgeous up there, I think you can walk up (might be a long sweaty walk though, I got a ride from my uncle up there). The view is amazing and when I was there, it was kinda misty so I felt like I was in the clouds, fucking awesome.

If you go to lantau, buy icecream from teh cart at the midway point of the trail, that man/woman deserves your business!! I have no idea how they manage to get the cart there.

I'm done for now, but post your thoughts and I'll try to help you out a bit more.

Lan Kwei Fong and Wan Chai bar and club areas.
LKF is where you'll find the hot local girls hanging out, mostly wanting a bit of your white ass. Wan Chai is ful of Filipina's.. wanting the same thing.. for that extra bit.

If Filipinos are your thing... Central on a Sunday.

obviously you did not read OP's post, he is not white and tbh the clubbing scene in HK sucks ass. Posers a plenty in LKF, if you want local, go to TST.

OP here.
Last few days spent visiting relatives, etc. Hopefully I'll get some time to spend for myself.

Fashion needs: Don't really have any, unless you count pens fashion accessories. Walked to Times Square today, hoping to get 10% discount @ Broadway because of cousin having HSBC credit card. Nothing's open with #9 typhoon signal in the mall (exceptions noted: fortress, starbucks, pacific coffee). Went across to Tsim Sha Tsui a few times, the Wanchai ferry is within ~15 minute walk of where I am right now, but never really had time to visit the mall. A look on the internets says that there's a pen shop there too, sooo I definitely should take a look.

Went up to the Peak yesterday, a family friend drove me up. Nice view, then it started raining. Got tour of HKU afterwards.

Nope, I don't have anything to enter mainland with, can't get visa on this short notice with the olympics, and I don't have a Home Return Permit. HKID cannot be used for entry into China, only for exit from HK

No time for clubbing, I'm still trying to call around and reschedule dinners/lunches with relatives and friends because of this damn typhoon warning closing everything. Also, the clubs might be open, but how do I get there? Buses are all stopped, MTR runs once every 15 minutes, trams are gone, minibuses don't follow set schedules, and taxis can charge whatever they want now.

I have three more things that I can hopefully buy while I'm in HK:

- Sony Ericsson G900 (for my brother, he's paying me to bring it across)
- Namiki/Pilot Capless décimo
- (Possibly) A cheap automatic Seiko 5.

First can be obtained anywhere, second in Sheung Wan, third... should I go to a department store or a watch store? though watch stores usually stock >$1000USD watches, since they're more profitable. (a basic Seiko 5 is maybe ~$60 USD online if you order grey market import)

here

I'm really not too sure about where to get a Seiko 5 but have you looked at City Chain? its a chain store that sells watches and they usually have a wide range of brands but I can't remember if they sold Seiko(they have a lot of shop, one on 9th floor of Times Square I believe. Have you tried those jewlerrry stores like Chow Sang Sang, but they may only sell like rolexs and stuff. Try department stores too like SOGO in CWB and Jusco at Tai Koo if you can't find it.

So you live in Wan Chai? LKF is in central, you can get out of Central MTR exit at the one where you get out of Landmark(the mall) or pretty much any other ones and you walk UP the hill. Hard to describe but there should be those signs taht point to where LKF is. Google is your friend on this.

Take a look at the mall in TST, it's really nice especially if you think there is a pen store there that might interest you.

Did you ever go to Macau? Go on a good sunny day and you can see people bungee off the Macau tower which is really cool. You can jump off too for $1000HKD I believe.
