My honest suggestion is going somewhere else. Japan as you undoubtedly know is still very sensitive to foreigners. Go to another English speaking country which is reasonably wealthy (or at least has good opportunities). There are a lot to choose from and if all you want is a break you can get your different-culture fix without taking too many chances on things, and chill out.
The language factor is important. Do you speak (or want to know) another language? Always factor that in.
In my 'gap' year I went to Cuba. It was one of the best years of my life. I'm no friend of communism, but I certainly enjoyed myself all the same. My Spanish is still pretty mediocre, but I could get around. And I NEVER had to worry about costs, although some things were frustratingly difficult to get at times.
If you're in it more for fun and culture than the money then maybe something like India/Canada/Australia/NZ or something.
