I've been on quite a few cruises. Here is what I've learned.
-Carnival is the proletariat cruise line. Look for lots of stinking lower-middle class families, and single frat boys and club girls trying to get laid. Service is so so, food is pretty good.
-Royal Caribbean is classier, but not entirely stuffy. More well to do people, but a higher percentage of older people as well. All in all, a good mix. Service is fantastic. Food is fantastic in the dining room, and great in the other restaurants. Plenty to do.
Destinations - How old are you? Realize that if you're 18, Royal Caribbean lets you drink in international waters if that's important to you. Not sure if Carnival does or not. Eastern Caribbean is pretty nice. Antigua and Barbados will have guys offering you ganja if you look cool. Great scenery. Western I've never been to, but I expect its great as well. Mediterranean I'm sure is totally different. If you choose this, make sure you stop at Madira! Hawaii will have you mostly at sea, so if you're okay with doing things onboard, it will be fine.
VERY IMPORTANT - The size and launch of the ship model (on RC, its XXXXXX of the seas) is very important to how good a time you'll have. Bigger and newer ships have the best onboard activities. Do your research and look for the biggest and newest ship for your destination. Please keep in mind that the biggest ships won't "fit" on some of the ports in certain areas, but still look for the newest and largest of those that will. (ie The mediterranean)
Rooms- GET A ROOM WITH A BALCONY at minimum. Trust me. Its worth it when you're having hot hippy chick sex with her bent against the railing and the moonlight reflecting off the water. That my friends, is an epic win.
