Study Abroad Suggestions Anonymous
Hey /trv/ I'm looking for some advice and knew this was probably my best bet for quality information.

I've recently decided that I want to do some sort of study abroad program through my home university but I've

stumbled upon a roadblock when one of my professors asked me where I wanted to go.
First let me give you some background info.

I'd be going during the 2009-2010 academic year and by that time I'll have completed six semesters of Spanish at my

home university. I'm not a hundred percent sure if I even want to go to a spanish speaking country but it would feel

wasteful not too and expande my skills.

The list of schools that my university has a bilateral exchange program with are as follows and are the ones I'm considering most...

ok ok, let me get this straight, the program is basically to expand your Spanish skills am I correct?

If that's the case, then choosing any non-Spanish speaking country will be an epic fail, common sense my friend, how are you gonna practise the language if you're in Japan or Germany?

It's not only the language but your main interests as well, you wanna live on a tight budget but experience some cool country? then go to Spain, it will be worth it, BUT if what you want is to master your Spanish skills, then go to Mexico.... Trust me it has some awesome places that are actually very lively and SAFE.

Take this advice from a Trilingual beaner (yes some of us do speak English and NO I'm not in your country)

inb4 "YOU STOLE MY JOB!, GTFO OF MY COUNTRY (I'm in Mexico right now for a bit and then going back to Canada to settle there) do you have any questions fellow anon? I'll help you out.

Go for Valencia, then travel across Europe from there. Switch majors and stufy Basque and spend time in Guernica.

You basically have three options here.
If your exchange programs are anything like my uni's there are some universities where you can take general education courses in English while learning the host language. This is good if you have any sort of experience with a third language that you might be interested in learning. 6 semesters of Spanish means you will pick it up in just a few months of being there.
The second is to go to Uruguay. Spain will be expensive because of the exchange rate and going from one developed country to another developed country will not be as adventurous. Uruguay is one of the better countries in latin america with a pretty stable government and economy. Plus it's small enough you can probably hop over to argentina fairly inexpensively and see two countries in one go.
The third (maybe best) is to go to Uruguay for one semester and to another country for one semester. It is entirely possible but it can get pretty expensive in airfare and may be a bit emotionally draining. 6 months should be more than enough for you to become totally fluent in spanish and 6 months of immersion should give you a good start on a 3rd language.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking actually. Especially the third option.
I think Uruguay would be interesting but I'm not sure I want to spend roughly a year in a place I have only a passing interest in.

I know its cliche but I really would love to see Europe and be in a major metropolitan area as I've only ever grown up in small rural towns here in the states. That is why I was leaning toward Spain or even Sweden or the Netherlands so I could have easy access to other places I've always wanted to visit.

Perhaps I just need more convincing that Uruguay is a worthy destination for so long a time. I had never thought about it honestly until know so my knowledge is limited.

But yes two five-six month stints in two different countries would be challenging but I think I might like to do something like that.

TLDR - Can anybody speak to Uruguay's strengths?
