no luck with /jp/ Joe Six Pack
I've been to 10 odd countries in the world, and I've always found there to be good cheap ways to have fun if you search for them.

However, this really isn't true for Japan. The cheapest options are generally not that cheap and not that much fun either.

How do you people enjoy yourselves in Japan?

Japans got a killer art scene going on too, you should check out some galleries and hook up with the artsy types. Cheap and a very fun time is quaranteed.

When I was poor and visiting Japan I walked around the city (Osaka) and made friends with people staying in my hotel. How would you define "fun"?

just drink. drinking is legal in public, hella cheap, and sleeping in parks in the summer time isnt that frowned upon.

n2m cheap tobbacco yes?

Drink/party and definitely check out art galleries. Japanese history is okay, sort of like some mutation between British (developing Constitutional Monarchy), German (fascism..) and US (in terms of how companies operate) history. The most interesting period is the 1850 onward era when Japan started borrowing loads of things from the West and decided it needed its own (rather brutal) empire to stave off an actual Western invasion. But I digress.

Japan has a genuinely unique gaming scene, if that interest you. Whatever your sexual desires, there will ALWAYS be someone into it, that's pretty well a guarantee (finding them could prove difficult, although much easier than elsewhere, most likely).

In the end it's always the incredibly mistrusting nature of Japanese society that gets to me. People always try to get inside your head and fuck with your mind. Even though I should have enjoyed my Japanese trip I just couldn't because everything was so obviously fake and commercialized. Japan is even worse as consumerists than the US in some regards (less wasteful, but more obsessed with gimmicks and gimmicky culture)

I go all over the place with my rail pass and take pictures of everything like a stereotypical Japanese tourist does when they go traveling.
There honestly isn't much in terms of material goods in Japan that I'm interested that I can't get in America if I were to just import it instead of flying over there. You're better off traveling lightly and going for the experience, atmosphere.

Nice place to visit, wouldn't want to live there.

>Nice place to visit, wouldn't want to live there.
Second that. If I could visit every summer for the rest of my life I would do it. Making a life there on the other hand, would be a bitch.

The consumer nature of Japan is surprisingly pervasive, but I'm not sure if that's because my view of it was skewed when I was there. Also, I'm not sure how it compares to US consumerism but its probably not that different(comparing Tokyo to New York, Osaka to Chicago, etc.), just with some exotic foreign flare.

clearly none of you guys have wandered out of the meccas of consumerism and into the back-wards to nowhere little towns. they're much nicer, and you get a big welcome because "zomg gaijin da!!"

WTF, OP. How poor are you? Two suggestions: quit being a cheapass, and consider getting out of urban central Japan. I lived in Tohoku for a year and the relative cost of living/cost of fun was way lower than Canada/US. Drink, make friends, do stuff with them, drink, drink some more, repeat.

Transportation is cheap, temples etc. are free or cheap, nature is (almost everywhere) free, food is cheap if you want it to be, drinking and shopping are ok. WTF is your idea of fun?

For living here, it's a blast, but I'm on a pretty decent pay rate. Dunno how much money you've got in mind, but unless you've got a decent amount on you/are making money while here, the various costs can and do add up quickly.

"Cheap" and "cities" do not go together in the same sentence. Cheap and country-side, however. As many have mentioned, small towns can be very friendly towards foreigners (provided you know your/their limits of proprienty: don't be an ass), many will have temples or shrines, and Karaoke is always great fun, provided you're not gonna be a saaaaaad panda all alone and stuff.
