I got back from a two week vacation in Japan and Thailand (-2 hours from Japan) and I had zero jetlag there. Here's what I did. I didn't have to try very hard to stay awake on the plane when necessary. I was so damn excited, that I really couldn't sleep very much.
As others have said, try to stay up around 24 hours before your flight, maybe less if necessary. Just don't exhaust yourself, because you can get sick from your body's physical exhaustion. When you get to Japan, try to plan on doing as much walking/physical exercise as possible during the day. Passing out at night will just come naturally then.
What you REALLY need to get ready for is the jetlag when returning to the states. I've been back for a little over a week and I still can't sleep right. Fawk.
Enjoy Japan, I now hate America because of it.
