What does the rest of the country think of the Midwest? Every region has their stereotypes, what's ours?
>> Anonymous
>>16263
Weren't you the retarded guys who kept inbreeding, or was that stuff further inland?
>> Anonymous
>>16266
That's further south. Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, etc.

>>16263
Our stereotype is sheer boredom. Absolutely nothing for as far as the eye can see. Or possibly for being in the bible belt.
>> Anonymous
>>16266
That's the isolated, mountainous areas of the Northeast, as well as anything south of the Mason-Dixon line.

I think the biggest stereotype is that were all farmers.

I'm from Iowa but I personal can't stand farm life.

ISU is also one of the leading public universities in energy and science technology. As well as agriculture and genetic engineering.

Yeah actually, Chicago is good if you go during the summer and you don't go anywhere south of it whatsoever (if you go to the south side or Gary Indiana you'll know why). Chicago is the only good Midwestern city. Other than Chicago the western coast of Michigan and parts of Ohio are okay but that's it.

Also Sufjan Stevens may make great albums about these states but they still suck royally.
>> Anonymous
Everyone in Michigan hates Ohio, The best part of Michigan is under water, Iowans have no accent, Minnesota sucks (literally). Arkansas came before Kansas, so Kansas should be pronounced "cunsaw". Nebraska has a big N, Wisconsin=cheese, Illinois and Indiana are the same state. It sucks to run out of gas in kentucky.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKlahoma.

Like another person said, don't go to Chicago's south side, and avoid Gary at all costs. Chicago's north side is like the gayest place in the midwest also, so be prepared for a lot of flamboyance.

Midwesterners don't have an accent because the Midwestern accent is considered standard American English.

Somewhere on the spectrum between Southern redneck and blue collar wife beater or soccer mom. Boring, trashy, little culture and terrible weather. Ignorant, emotionless people.

I've found this to be both true and untrue, depending on where you go in the Midwest. Also, Kansas and Oklahoma are Plains states, in my opinion.

There are no stereotypes because there is nothing in the midwest any sane person (people from the east coast) would be interested in. So we just don't even bother spending the time thinking about the void in the middle of the US

Mid west is

Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, kinda some of Colorado, Missouri, Some or Illinois, but mostly not, Oklahoma, and thats it.

All those states in that pic, Wisconsin (cheese) Minnesota (Canadians without the maple leaf) Illinois (chicago) Indiana (poor) Michigan (does the north part even exist at a national level?) and Ohio (wtf has Ohio ever done for America? ) are Great Lake States.

Once known as being huge in the industrial revolution, are now poor thanks to India discovering the marvels of electricity.

>Great Lakes States

I think you hit the nail on the head there. The Great Lakes area is very different from the rest of the landlocked Midwest. Great Lakes area is heavily industrialized while the Midwest is exclusively agricultural.

The other term for the Great Lakes region is, of course, the Rust Belt, as the California service economy model has caused our national policy to shift away from industrialization.

It can often get extremely hot, like in the hundreds hot. I hear this is due to the fact that we are in the middle of a fucking huge continent which takes a good long time to get hot after the beginning of summer but also stays hot for a long time afterward. It's because land keeps its temperature longer than water, and it's why the fall here is hot and brief. I heard Kazakhstan has a similar climate.

You have it backwards. Water keeps its temperature longer than land. It's why sea or lake-effect breeze comes in from the water during the day and goes out at night.

Chicago gets into the hundreds hot because it is a monstrous heat island on the wrong side of the lake, as the Westerlies stop the lake-effect breeze from penetrating very far into the city.

Other midwest cities like Detroit and Gary would have it as bad if there were as many people in the city proper. As Detroit and Gary are mostly deserted, the temperature is a few degrees cooler, and nobody is around to care.

Are you sure? I wasn't talking about the daily cycle but the yearly cycle, or the seasons. I thought the seasons changed more gradually on the coasts for this reason.
>> Anonymous
>>18025
The coasts are affected by ocean currents. The East Coast is warmer than it should be because of the Gulf Stream, which takes warm water from the Gulf and deposits it in the North Sea. The West Coast is cooled by the California current, which takes cold water from North Pacific down to Baja California.

These currents tend to moderate the affect of the seasons because, again, water holds its temperature better than land, which means these currents are roughly the same temperature year round, in comparison to the land masses they border.
>> Anonymous
Hard working and polite. Aside from the big cities we are not completely overrun with niggers yet.

You can examine the reasons why water has a smaller temperature range than land at this page:

http://www.uwsp.edu/geo/faculty/ritter/geog101/textbook/temperature/temperature_water_bodies_p_1.htm
l

Short version:
* Water loses energy to evaporation, heats slower
* Water is more reflective than land, heats slower
* Water circulates at depth, heats/cools slower
* Water has a specific heat 5 times that of land, heats/cools slower

These people have it right. Being by water pretty much guarantees your weather will be a bit more mild than in an inland city. In the winter, Chicago will often be a lot colder than say Muskegon. Even though Muskegon is a few hours north, it's right on the lake, yet East of the jet stream. Chicago is simply on the wrong side of the water, and doesn't benefit. The lake keeps Muskegon warmer, and for that matter, the whole West coast of Michigan.

After living in Chicago for quite a few years and then moving to New York, I've noticed the winters here in NYC are MUCH milder. This is actually due to two factors. 1. The ocean helps keep us warm, and 2. The Appalachian mountains actually prevent Canadian chills from creeping to the south east.
