Hey travellers!

I want to go to Brazil. What should I expect, what should I be aware of, how much is a good budget, and will English get me around there at all?
I'm thinking of learning Spanish, but I'm not sure how much utility it would have in a country that speaks mostly Portugese, if I'm not mistaken.

Brazilian here, just be careful where you go. There are so much robbers, you cant just walk alone with your celphone, mp3 etc etc Do you have any friends here? Try to stick to them, you will be safe and will have a great time here.

"JAJAJAJA" is for hispanics, retard.

Depends where you are going. But seeing as that you are not sure about what language is spoken you need to do some more research. Amerifag living in Brazil.

Definitely so. My guiding motivations at this point are pretty much the touted fine ass and beaches.

So you are just interested in girls and the beach? Where are you planning on going? Rio probably. Be careful where you go in Rio. Brazil has a very high income discrepancy and neighborhoods can go from very rich to slums in a matter of a couple streets. It's still like being in any large city though, just don't be stupid. Brazil is an awesome country, but try and do at least some minimal research before hopping on a plane.

The nicer beaches and friendlier women are in the northeast. Rio is beautiful but does have a real crime problem. That said, you just don't carry expensive things etc and so if you do get robbed, which is unlikely anyhow, you won't lose much. Rio is full of foreigners so there is a definite "meh" factor from the ladies there towards gringos. The northeast is another story.

You haven't been there, have you?

I strongly recommend you to avoid SE of brazil, beaches and girls-wise. Try NE or South in florianapolis but do a decent search before because brasil is huge.

No, not entirely. I'd love to take in the culture, sights, sounds, etc.
The women and beaches do really sweeten the deal though!

How is the northeast different?

Brazilfag here. Although the reputation is bad, São Paulo is awesome if you wanna feel the brazilian urban culture. But try to stick with a local, because the bad rep isn't that fake.

Another brazilfag here. This country is HUGE, so cultural trends, music, food, etc varies a great deal depending on where you are. The northeastern portion (specially the coastal capitals eg Belém, São Luís, Fortaleza, Recife and Maceió) has the best beaches and the people there are more prone to parties everyday, everytime. Also the food is fantastic (prepare your stomach for we love to add lots of onion, garlic, peppers and herbs in our sauces) and if you´re looking for seafood, you´re in paradise.

The southeast is interesting too if you want to know our biggest financial centers. São Paulo is the biggest city in Brazil and the financial center of the country (where I live). Rio de Janeiro is the second biggest city, with beautiful beaches as a bonus. They´re very near to each other - 6 hours by bus, 45 min by plane. On the other hand sadly, with all the prosperity comes the highest crime rates of Brazil.

The more to the south you go (Curitiba, Florianopolis, Porto Alegre) the more of our european heritage you get to see. Also the crime rates range to low to very low. Beautiful beaches in Florianopolis, but the weather isn´t as hot as the northeastern ones - sometimes it can be VERY cold - so remember that seasons are inverted below the Equatorial plane and plan your trip accordingly.

Just don´t go wandering in the suburbs waving your camera and you´re fine - this rule applies to every other city on here.

Like Italy, Japan or Portugal, you get around well in big cities and hubs. Go to the country and you´re fucked.

No utility at all, we only speak Portuguese here. How about Spain?

Another advice: in northeast, keeping distance from cute little girls offering you a good time will save you from being raped in jail.

English wont get you far. Learn at least some basic Portuguese (portuguese from brazil mind you)
furthermore, what everybody else said. Dont wave around with camera/ipod/money in the poorer parts and you'll be fine. Always have some money on you, but not too much, in the case you do get robbed if you ever do wander in a bad neigborhood. Then you can just give em the money, so they can leave fast, and you dont lose much.
