Northern Germany: If you like Vikings and want to visit the place which was once the biggest Viking-city in Europe, and afterwards the largest city of Denmark until Germany won it somewhere around 1864, you might like to visit Hedeby (That's next to the city Schleswig). Funny fact: NOTHING is left of it but the things you find in the museum and some replicas of Viking-houses they built at the shore.
If you're not intereseted in Vikings, bog bodies, history of northern Germany, baroque gardens or the replica and history of this thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globe_of_Gottorf it's not very interesting, though.
You might want to visit one of the islands, like Sylt, Föhr or the city of Husum on the mainland again. You can walk across the mudflats of the North Sea, book guides and tours for it, you can visit the museums there, most of them are themed around the history of the islands or the North Sea and the life people had to live (and still have to) with big floods or fires. I find it very interesting. I love the dunes, the landscapes and the way people live there. (pic related)
There are many places more in Germany that haven't got anything to do with WW.
