Lol, just read this shit about Lee Kuan Yew on Wikipedia.

"Devan Nair, the third president of Singapore and who was living in exile in Canada, remarked in a 1999 interview with the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail that Lee's technique of suing his opponents into bankruptcy or oblivion was an abrogation of political rights. He also remarked that Lee is 'an increasingly self-righteous know-all', surrounded by 'department store dummies'. In response to these remarks, Lee sued Devan Nair in a Canadian court and Nair countersued."

Because Singapore is run by the Chinese, while the rest of Southeast Asia is run by ... Southeast Asians.

It also explains why it's a dictatorship. Even Taiwan was a dictatorship until somewhat recently.

Devan Nair, the only President who never appears on any Singaporean history textbooks.

truth. however the one fault that dictatorship has is that it is a system that cannot guarantee that the successive dictators won't ruin the country.

They have a long and illustrious history as a major commercial center, they were a British Colony along with Malaya, and have a safely established banking and financial capacity. Its a geographically advantageous location, having direct access to the straits of Malacca, and has a substantial manufacturing capability, a combo which makes it the equivalent of a miniature Japan export-wise. The Singaporeans are very astute economically, so they haven't fucked up like the Japanese (in nearly every endeavor to recover the Japanese have been laughable failures).

Turns out democracies have the same problem.

excellent point there

Democracy isn't a good form of government in the long run, because the vast majority of people are idiotic and shouldn't be allowed to make important decisions regarding the country.

I actually think the single party state is a pretty good one. One crazy asshole doesn't have COMPLETE power, instead it's more like 10 assholes that have absolute power. Surely among the 10 (or whatever) of these elite they can not screw up too badly.

it doesnt matter what system a country follows. it really depends on the people themselves and how united they are. a people who is united will not fall no matter what sort of government they have. just compare america and china with certain african countries.

Singapore is essentially the model dictatorship. It's basically what Hitler and Mussolini had in mind for Germany and Italy respectively, minus the ethnic cleansing.

The little island-city has exchanged everything that makes a country truly great for cleanliness, order and efficiency.

In the US Civil War one of the pro-slavery arguments used by the south was that as the blacks were their property they'd naturally be inclined to take much better care of them than the north, who were effectively just renting their labour (ie wages). The notion that a human cannot complain about any aspect of his life so long as his material wellbeing rises is pretty morally abominable. Well, Singapore ultimately subscribes to this idea.

If Singapore is a dictatorship, there wouldn't be a voting system and opposition parties controlling an area where their supporters are.

Not to mention that no one ever being oppressed in that country. Plus citizens aren't treated as state property at all, since they can do whatever they want beside just obeying the laws which was created to make Singapore into what it is.
>> Anonymous
As a Singaporean, I have to say I find my country terribly boring.

>> Anonymous
>>52065
Though Singapore does have a voting system, it is largely a facade because no citizen has ever voted for any Singaporean president. Not even once since independence.

No one has been oppressed? What about some of the more outspoken opposition leaders in the past, or the third Singaporean president? Guess why there isn't any significant opposition leader now.

Singaporeans can do anything they want as long as they do not break the law. How about homosexuals who want to be teachers?

Citizens aren't treated as property directly. But with the heavily censored local media, they do whatever their government wants them to do. And they're all too happy to be tools.

What do I care for your suffering? Pain, even agony, is no more than information before the senses, data fed to the computer of the mind. The lesson is simple: you have received the information, now act on it. Take control of the input and you shall become master of the output.

I doubt that a trade-heavy country surrounded by moderate and fundamentalist Muslims would find it wise to accommodate to the needs of homosexuals. Besides, all the fags prefer to live in Thailand.
>> Anonymous
>>52405
At the very least, they should be treated as humans like everyone else. It's not like they're asking for a gay parade, which would likely offend the muslim neighbours.

Btw, it is quite disturbing that many Thai fags can look hotter than the women. It's creepy to find that a hot chick you're trying to chat up has an incredibly manly voice.

They just seem to be live with it while some just roam around the world.

I say something favorable about a dictatorship and you belittle me and say I'm morally reprehensible, and when I champion democracy you call me naive and simple-minded.

I hate you, world.
