Queensland and some parts of NSW is something of a "deep north", and tends to have a lot of "yobbo" culture mixed with nationalism, very few immigrants or Aborigines, and as such tend to be a lot more right-wing nationalist then normal lefty Melbourne/Sydney.
If you look up the Crunella riots incident on Wikipedia, it was really a massive over-the-top reaction to long running Lebanese gang violence that finally crossed the line, that One Nation types hijacked to push their own racist agendas. A pretty disgraceful situation, we all feel ashamed about it but it wasn't done entirely out of racism.
Our new PM, Kevin Rudd has finally given the Aborigines an apology over the entire "Stolen Generation" incidents of the 70s and is shutting down the off-shore detention of illegal immigrants that Howard started. He's riding on a 70% approval rating so far, so he must be doing something right.
Melbourne is barely racist at all, and even if some people are they aren't going to tell it to your face. Racists are pussies.
