I'm graduating college next year and I want to take about a year off after and spend some time in a new place. I've been thinking of either going around the US or going to Italy. Basically, if I go abroad, I'd want a place that's not all suburbs and skyscrapers. Can anyone help me?

Here's some ass for you in return.

There's a whole lot to see in the U.S. If you decide to travel within the States, I suggest a National Park tour. You would not regret it.

Costa Rica, if you're willing to navigate your way through the shitty roads. It really is a nice place.

Try Zurich.

I if were you I would think about joining the peace corps, although it sounds like you are looking more for a vacation than a two year commitment to a pretty tough job... Certainly wouldn't be any suburbs or skyscrapers though.

I'm with this guy. There is so much to see in the US if you're just willing to get off the Interstates and on to the blue highways.

US Route 2 is my current favorite. It runs from a semi-small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and runs across the high Mid West and the plains to Seattle. Great food, great camping, great sites. You cannot go wrong.

I agree with this. If you want to see the USA you should definitely hit up the national parks. One of our greatest resources is our natural beauty. Travel all over the west (Rockies and west) and there is more than enough great things to see. Highlights are Yellowstone of course, Gran Titon, Glacier, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Olympia, Mt Rainer, Yosemite( although its a bit overrated and just jam packed with people), Grand Canyon (north rim is my favorite in my opinion), and Death Valley (honestly my favorite one of them all, but you got to like desert and for heavens sakes dont go during summer). Also you should try to swing up into Canada, they have some pretty rad places too like Banff and Jasper. As far as cities go, San Fran and NY are a must. You might as well skip LA, its just a mass expanse of characterless sprawl
