I'm planning on taking a trip to Toronto, Montreal, and maybe Boston or Quebec City. I'd fly into Toronto, take the train to Montreal, and either fly to Boston or Quebec City, then fly home.

Any suggestions for what to do in these cities in August? What's a good length to stay in each (two weeks or so is my maximum vacation time)?

that should be "fly to Boston or take the train to Quebec City."

Make sure you pass by Montreal. There's usually a lot of stuff going on during summer, like the Jazz festival. Can't say all the events there are from memory though. Traveling through montreal is fairly easy with the metro (subway), just buy a weekly pass and you're set. Plus most people in montreal know english, unlike in Quebec City where you'll need to know some french to get by outside of tourist areas.

Quebec city has great places though, and there's a lot there historically. But still I'd recommend at least spending a few days in montreal. Bars open until 3am, then there's after-hours, legal drinking age is 18 (dunno if that matters to you though), you get to taste poutine (La Banquise in montreal has the best poutines ever). Check up the net for events in Montreal this summer. I'm sure you'd have a lot to do.

i feel that i know enough french to get by for the length of my visit, so that shouldn't be a problem. montreal will be the main focus of my trip, as i'm also planning on going to school there starting in january. i'm turning 21 after the trip, so i'll definitely be spending a good deal of time in bars (which brings me to another wuestion: are there open bottle laws in toronto, montreal, and quebec city? can i walk down the street with a beer in my hand?)

also, are there any specific places to check out? are there any areas that i should skip past? (for example, i'd recommend the golden gate bridge and coit tower in san francisco, but lombard street and chinatown aren't too exciting).
