Johannesburg is subject to a lot of media hype and negativity (seriously, it's nowhere near as bad as Perth, Australia). It's actually a very pleasant, interesting city. If you plan on doing a lot of driving in SA, make sure to drive with your windows down, as having them up makes you look antisocial/potential terrorist/target. Also make sure you take full advantage of people selling oranges/newspapers etc. at road intersections - this is how most locals buy daily essentials. Some parts of Jo'burg are not wise to visit at night, but completely safe parts of the city include Berea and Hillbrow, you will have no problems there. Also, many Sarth Efricans are quite image conscious and dress immaculately for what most would deem casual social occassions. So unless you want to be scoffed at, and look like an obvious tourist, I suggest wearing nothing but the best articles in your wardrobe, a nice watch goes down well also.
