It's a series of contructions built for water defence in the southwest of the Netherlands. Construction started in 1950 but was massively expanded after the North Sea flood of 1953 ( 1800 killed, 70,000+ people evacuated and lots of infrastructure damage ). Took about 50 years to complete a total of 10,250 miles of dikes and 300 structures.

Pic shows where some of the bigger structures were built.

Pic is the Maeslant Barrier. It's the largest moving structure in the world(each of those doors are 240 meters long). Designed to withstand even surges of storms that have an occurrence rate of only 1 in 10,000 year.

Structure on this pic is the Oosterschelde barrier. It's the biggest structure of the Delta works. It's over 9km long and cost about 2.5 billion euro.

The island in the middle was artificially made. In between those white things are the doors that can be closed if the water rises too much.

There's lots of other smaller structures but i'm kinda lazy atm. So if you want more pics you'll just have to google.

The "afsluitdijk", a 32 kilometer long dyke that cuts off a large inland see, turning it into a lake.

Saltwater see on the left, freshwater lake on the right.
