Travelling to, and briefly living in Russia alone: what does /trv/ think?

I know the country's problems are greatly exaggerated in Western media, I know the crime rate probably isn't as bad as its made out to be, I know I won't really be treated like a disease by (all of) the locals... but I'm rather scared, to be honest. I've happily ventured to Poland and Latvia with little anxiety, but I'm finding the prospect of 6 months in Saint Petersburg very fucking intimidating.

If thats you first travel abroad, I would strongly discourage it. But since you say you lived in Latvia and Poland, I think you will be tottaly fine. I believe, Poland is more dangerous. Just be street-smart, dont venture alone at night, dont keep $5000 cash visible in your back pocket (and I have fucking seen it, stupid tourists).
Are you living with someone, or tottaly by yourself? Cause if you dont know anyone local to show you places, and dont speak Russian you are, well, not tottaly screwed, but the trip might not be the most plesent one. Hotels are disproportinaly expensive compared to service they provide. Plus, IIRC, most museums/theaters are about 5-10 times more expensive for foreigners.
Oh, and btw, enjoy shity SPb weather.
