As for individual cities heres the breakdown IMO
-Phoenix: I hate this place, it has no personality to me. It's basically just a big city with no character. Imagine taking L.A., putting it in the middle of the desert and keeping all the negatives like crime (although Phx has a higher crime rate than LA now) gangs, traffic, air pollution...but removing everything that makes LA worthwhile like the beach, weather, nightlife, diversity...that's PHX in a nutshell -Tucson: College town, can be dead with nothing going on in the summertime. It's a little higher in elevation so the climate is a little nicer than PHX, there's also Mt. Lemmon a short drive to the northeast to get away from the heat if you want to. A lot of parts of it are filled with lazy, flakey hippie types, and it is a fairly liberal town for such a conservative state. Again there's not much to do here unless you're a real outdoorsy-type of person, in that case there's good hiking trails around. It's also a great city to live in if you ride a bike everywhere. This is a good city to retire in -Yuma: 3rd largest city in AZ, but for god's sake don't live there. Terrible in every way -Flagstaff: Up in the mountains, gets regular snow in the wintertime, so if you hate cold this place might not be for you. It has a nice small town atmosphere but last I heard the cost of living is rising here due to transplants buying up real estate
