Shit, Mt. Baker is an active volcano, there's some hot springs in Skagit county and try driving Highway 20 over the pass sometime.

I've been wanting to go to the Pacific NW for a long time now. I'm going to say fuck it and go there any way possible before I have to go back to school (3rd year of college). I will be staying with an old friend who has an extra car he's willing to let me use, which saves big money, big money, big money, no whammy, no whammy, no whammy, STOP! (lol)

Two questions:
1. Does anybody know of what the cheapest way to get to Seattle would be (from Chicago)? The best I can find for airfare is about $300 from NW Airlines. Driving would be $700 round-trip and Amtrak is also outrageous at $600+. Does anybody here know or have any experience with cheaper travel?

2. What could I do? I know of food, festivals, State Parks, and the one thing I really want to see is the Japanese Gardens, but what else?

Bus is probably going to be cheapest.

There are many Japanese gardens... just in Seattle alone there is probably 3 or 4. One fun thing to do when you're new is just go walking around the city exploring on foot, taking pictures, etc. It's small enough to walk the entire downtown area in a few hours. Go see Mt. St Helens, go hiking.... etc.
