What do the people of /trv/ think of the TKM-World Link plan for a tunnel between Russia and Alaska? Worth the cost? Personally I think the idea of taking a train from Washington D.C. to London to be pretty awesome.
>> Anonymous
I have a huge bo/n/er for trains, and with gas prices going the way they are, I could see this becoming a little more practical. I hope this is built, this shit makes me feel like we're actually progressing towards the future.
>> Anonymous
Why would people cross Alaska and Siberia by train when they can easily fly the other way and visit Europe along the way? Makes no sense to me.

Dude,

>>43317

The guy above already answered it. IMO, we're kinda taking a step backwards with trains.

>>43344
If we can work towards faster trains that run cheaper and pollute less than aeroplanes, then why would that be a step backwards? The only drawback is that travelling takes longer, which might actually not be a bad thing in a globalising world.

>>43344

When you fly somewhere, you're only visiting your final destination. When you take a train, you get to see all sorts of stuff along the way. Oh, but I forgot that everyone these days doesn't know how to slow the fuck down and smell the roses, it has to be now now faster faster FASTER.

isnt it difficult to reach Alaska in the first place? last i've heard u had to fly to some spot then take a cruise ship
>> Anonymous
>>43352

Then after you get off of the boat, you've gotta hike for nearly two weeks before you get to a ferry that will take you to Alaska.

...

Seriously man, WTF? You can fly to Alaska and drive to Alaska very easily.

/trv/ is so fucking misinformed. In another alaska thread they were talking about how if you lived in Anchorage you needed to own a gun to defend yourself from animal attacks...

No it's not, faggot. They were not uninformed about Alaska with a lack of information, but rather misinformed with false statements. I hate you. I seriously fucking hate you. The only thing worse than someone on the internet thinking he is smart, is someone on the internet thinking he is smart and being wrong.

Wow you actually bothered. I'm impressed. Seriously.

The rail link between Russia and Alaska seems stupid to me. It'll be a link between nowhere and nowhere -- why do it?

Also, it would take you forever to travel overland from the US to Europe via Russia. ESPECIALLY though Russia where their train system is notoriously slow. It would be cheaper to fly.

Freight transport of goods, dude. Rather than flying / shipping grebes China <---> USA, you can move them along the rail lines.

agreed, it's a journey from nowhere to nowhere, but that's not the point - the channel tunnel was un-necessary AND unpopular, but it still got built, even though everyone knew it would lose a metric cratonne of money a day. Big engineering projects are fun. Also, it's probably not that big a deal to get people on trains trough a tunnel, but there's probably some kind of energy connection - pipelines, elecrical cables, I dunno. Effectively links up the Alaskan and Caspian Oilfields, which probably draws bigger bucks than trainspotters.

I dont think actually making tunnels underneath the middle of the Atlantic from Europe to the US is all that far off, you you wouldn't need a bridge in Alaska.
>> Anonymous
Maybe it's a good idea so nowhere and nowhere actually become somewhere.

What a fucking awful map.

This Japan-Korea tunnel would actually serve a real purpose. Of course, even if the Japanese people approved quite another story for all those flag burning Korean idiots.

with such a long tunnel, there will be a need for an incredible variety of safety precautions. plus there is nothing to see unless they make it out of glass and place loads of lamps out there at the bottom of the ocean, which will increase the costs to obscene levels.

i'm also guessing that such a train ride will take at a day with a high speed rail , eg the eurostar and etc. but if you're taking that, you can't see shit during the journey.

therefore it'll be either a fucking boring ride that lasts only a day, or a very beautiful train ride that takes weeks of non-stop motion.

However, the latter can be improved upon by placing stations along the tunnel that allow tourists to alight look up into the ocean. This will, of course, increase the need for more safety features, ie, costs.

Such a project will require cooperation between the US, russia and probably the EU or China just to get enough funds.

In short, planes are way cheaper.

It's part of his diabolical scheme to build this trans-Pacific railroad so that he can get into America walk right into your house and start shoving you around. Do you want that? Huh? DO YA?
Then vote against the trans-Pacific railroad.

i don't think that there is any use in connecting america with the cold wastelands of siberia. keep in mind that there is basically NOTHING east of moscow.
