Others are right that it's tough here job-wise and expense-wise. If you're just looking for "bullshit work," have fun competing in a place that's ass-deep in cheap Mexican labor. Whether you're looking for grunt work or something in an office, you'd better be financially prepared to stick it out for a good long while if you want to stay. So many jobs here pretty much require knowing both Spanish and English that it's ridiculous, and most employers assume that, if you're not brown, you're expensive and too demanding.
Attitude-wise, I would call it more a sewer of people who are generally selfish, uncaring, shallow, and downright rude. Of course, you'll inevitably fall in with a group of friends who make things bearable. Never expect a friendly greeting in any store and don't be surprised if people don't return your "Hello" when you pass them on the street.
Unless there's some specific industry that you want to get into here, I would not plan on staying beyond the winter or however long your friend will put up with you. There's plenty of places to drink cheaper and find equal or better women...in fact, I personally find that LA area women come with the most baggage in the whole US. In other words, LA women will suck you dry, my friend, and I don't mean that in a good way.
I plan on getting out of here for good in 2009, and good riddance. If you come, I wish you a better time, but don't say that you haven't been warned. And, unless you're from Oregon or Washington, pray to the deity of your choice that The Big One doesn't hit during your stay because I guarantee you that it'll make what happened after Hurricane Katrina look like a little girl's tea party.
