You just need money. There are several expeditions to Antarctica for the "common man". You don't need to go there in study or anything.

If you're interested in remote places like that I advise you go to Prypriat, the city right next to Chernobyl and must be the best ghost town ever. I don't know the exact details, but again, shouldn't be too hard if you have some money on the side to pay for an expedition there.

Also, not really remote or abandoned on the real sense, but Iceland is a good place for a few days. It's a modern country, but compared to every other one is really empty and remote.
