So.

I want to finish off my History Education degree and go to Phoenix. What can /trv/ tell me about it? How's the food, people, life, etc...

Born and raised there.

You're gonna die.
And it's going to hurt.

I'm sure the people are cool like a lot of other parts of AZ, but, goddamn, the air pollution there is horrid. Whenever i fly there, i try to spend as little time as possible there. So fucking disgusting.

You'd better learn Spanish, only about 9% of the population in Phoenix speaks English.

Phoenixfag here - 73454's premise is bullshit. i've never met anyone in phoenix that didn't speak english. so long as you don't venture into the ghettos in south phoenix or hang out too long in the fast food kitchens, everyone will speak comprehensible english.

it is true - we are in the desert, we are a big city, our public transportation is horrid. this means that everyone drives cars, but there are generally no winds or rain to push the pollution out of the valley.

to your question:

food: depends entirely on where you want to live in phoenix. downtown? glendale? scottsdale? suburb? you're generally fine anywhere you go. you're not going to find too many fancy restaurants compared to other big cities in the U.S., but there is good cheap food around.

the people can either really suck or be really awesome, and i've had much more experiences with the latter. we're a pretty laid back city - just don't irritate any other drivers on the road, i'm sure about 20% of them carry a gun in their cars, because you're allowed to according to AZ state law.

Quality of life is alright, but it is improving daily - public transportation systems are rapidly becoming more efficient and comprehensive, people are buying up phoenix homes from the inside out... it's cheap to live here, but our teachers are paid dirt... unless you work at a fancy private school. oh, and the teachers have an awful hard time unionizing. talk to a teacher before you move, for sure.

I'd recommend to you, OP, that you find what sort of location you'd like to live in in phoenix and rent a place for a month. craigslist.org is loaded with dirt cheap homes/apartments for rent just about anywhere. Also, talk to a few teachers in that area and ask them how they're paid, if they like their job, etc.

also, if you're between 22-39 and are not married with children yet, move to a central location - anywhere between 14th ave and 14th st and between camelback rd. and mcdowell rd. is AWESOME.

Phoenix fucking sucks.
It gets hotter, dryer and filthier every year.
Just go rub sand in your eyes, sit in your oven and have somebody shout spanish at you instead.

its great if you love McMansions, heat, pollution, sprawl, and sitting in your car for long periods of time.

Oh I wish you hadn't said Phoenix

I've spent a few years living in Tempe, which is close to Pheonix, but has none of the bullshit.

my summary of my experiences of going into pheonix: there are homeless fuckers everywhere that smell like piss, bald mexican gangbangers all over the place, lots of gang crime, just typical big city bullshit. not to mention, its a fucking desert. i would NOT suggest going to pheonix unless you absolutely can't avoid it.

Protip: your "typical" big city isn't an overgrown subdivision.
