Hi /trv/
I've been living in Beijng for the past few months studying and I'm getting about 2 months off in January. I desperately wanna do some traveling. I'm gonna be in Haerbin until mid Jan for the ice festival and then I've got about 4 or 5 weeks for the rest.

So what are the must-sees in China? I've seen most stuff in and around Beijing so I can skip that. I really wanna go to Yunnan and maybe Sichuan. I should probably head to Xi'an too.

Thanks in advance.

haerbin in january? shit that's practically like siberia.
you are me one year ago. i went to yunnan and it's a gorgeous place worth checking out. it will be like spring there in jan. its not too far from 'nam either so u might be interesting in checking that out too. xi an is also quite nice, lots and lots of historic type things worth checking out, i didn't make it to sichuan although i really wanted to. you might want to throw in tibet or hong kong, just to get the two extremes of china.

I'm kind of counting on it being cold in Haerbin, the ice festival would be kinda crappy otherwise. I'm doing all of SE Asia in July, so I'm not fussed about Vietnam at the mo, and Tibet is a bit of a bitch to get into, what with the political trainwreck that's going on.

Anywhere in particular in Yunnan worth seeing?

When in Yunnan the obvious places are Lijiang, Dali, Zhongdian, Xishuangbanna, lately i went to the Nujiang valley, go there if you want an off-the-beaten-track adventure.

yangshuo is worth checking out, it's the place with all those weird mountains and fog that are painted everywhere for a "mystical china" I went there last year and wouldn't believe the fucked up mountains that appear as if they just sprang up vertically from the ground.

The 20 rmb note i think has a picture of yangshuo and I went to that exact location

If you haven't already been to Shanghai, it's brilliant. Otherwise, Ningbo and Putaoshan is a beautiful area if you're interested in Buddhism.

In Sichuan, check out Chengdu (giant Buddha), Guangzhou is never a bad choice, and I would definitely recommend Yan'an.

Finally, Sanya is the Hawaii of China, and there's nothing wrong with that.

If it's in Jan. that you have off, then go down south for God's sake. I can only imagine what BJ is like in the winter.

Visit Unit 731 in the city of Harbin.

Just checked out unit731 on wiki. That's pretty fucked up.

I'll be up in Harbin in January too. Ice festival.

Check out Kashgar (Kashi) and the Pamir mountain region in southwest Xinjiang. I think Osama is hiding out there.
