Let me conduct a little survey here.
Tell me the population of...

...the city/town you were born and raised in:
...the city town you now live in:
...the city/town you wish to live in:

I'm asking this to see if people want to generally move from small towns into big cities, the opposite, or just whatever they're not currently in.

My own values are 10k/85k/85k.

According to this sample of 3 people, everybody who starts out in a small town will either move to a bigger one or at least wants to.

According to this sample of 4 people, everybody who starts out in a small town will either move to a bigger one or at least wants to, and everybody who starts out in a larger one wants to move to a hut in the woods.

6 people now, same results. A surprising amount of people want to move to a >1M city. And almost everybody here originated in some semi-rural place of less than 30k people.

After 9 people we still have pretty much the same results that people who were raised in small towns want into bigger ones and those raised in big towns into smaller ones, except for one strange individual who is content to stay just where he is.

Which doesn't say much as it is his hometown. There are thousands of reasons why he would stay there. None of them have necessarily to do with the size of the city.
>> Anonymous
I was raised in the countryside, and I'd still like to move to smaller places. Don't really like the big cities, unless I've got some pals to be with.

Otherwise they're just labyrinthine.

Same here, I find cities (anything above 300-400k) claustrophobic and depressing.

Around 100k is fine, big enough that you can usually get what you want without having to drive but small enough to not feel like the buildings are closing in or the people are choking you with invisible hands.

There just is more... stuff in bigger towns. But I still like to have reasonable distances within the city, and a quick escape to more rural areas.

This will also lead to the ultimate destruction of mankind (=developing countries), since less and less people are outside urban areas, farming and making food

It's crazy, Vancouver always seems like it has a bigger population than Winnipeg. It's much more dense, and has a lot more going on.
