I remember a guy a couple years ago on /b/ claimed that he had sex with a child prostitute in Laos...
>> Anonymous
>>15295
It's possible, but Laos has laws (quite strict ones at that) against foreigners having sex with locals. And I'm not going there to pay for sex, it just sad.

Could just be me, but as SOON as i hear someone's going to cambodia, i assume its to molest child prostitutes... Christ, i'm even skeptical of people who plan on going to thailand, because its just a few hours away from cambodia, with open boarders.

I mean you're going to a shitty, poor, dangerous country who has little to no 'clean' tourist spots.

Cambodia is a pretty off the beaten path to be sure, but if you are interested in the history of war crimes and genocide... well it's a required visit.
Still, there isn't much else there that an English only speaker can do. The jungles have been cut down, what's left is riddled with LAND MINES. The population was literally starving to death not long ago (after a massive genocide), and as such, they really haven't had the time to set up any tourist interface.
I would advise those seeking sex to not go there though, the aids rate is of african proportions--in fact it's worse than much of africa.

I would recommend flying into Thailand and then branching out to visit their neighbors.
Thailand is a much more stable and tourist friendly country. I've been in the area a few times and I would really advise a first timer to start where it is easy and then work your way in a loop through Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam. Cambodia and Laos are pretty iffy in terms of tourism/sightseeing. You're really going to be on your own if you don't speak the language.
Vietnam is much more used to foreigners, there is a large (though unorganized) tourist industry there.
When I say "tourist" I don't mean it like "hay ride the elephant for a $1!"... I mean hotels will be able to deal with your language disability, there are accurate maps, good guides to scenic/historical areas, people are somewhat used to having to deal with you not knowing wtf is going on, ect.
Anyway, have fun and be safe. Most of these four countries are rather safe, but desperate people will sometimes do desperate things--so be very cautious. You must be adventurous to go to SE asia, but don't be *too* adventurous.

I agree with 15325
I've been in Laos for a few days only, but Cambodia is pretty cool, not much to see or do save for the Angkor temples, also visit the Tonle Sap lake. Re: guesthouses, there are a few cool guesthouses in an isolated part of Phnom Penh, right next to (and over) the Boeung Kak lake - Number Nine guesthouse is very, very popular, great view over the lake, a lot of cool people stay there, they have a large communal area, pool, hammocks and tap beer for 50cents/jug. Rooms are 3 or 4$, but they have 2 rooms in the back of the upper floor which you can get for 2$ if you ask.
Also, you should try visiting Thailand and/or Vietnam too, they are close and definitely a better location to start off.

Places to hit in Laos:

Vientiane, Vang Vien, Luang Prabang, Savannkhet

If you're flying, you'll be going from Bangkok to Vientiane ... i don't think the second airport is open yet in Savannakhet. You can take the friendship bridge from Nong Khai to Vientiane, or the second bridge from Mukdhan to Savannkhet.

Lots of foreign investment is going on in Laos now ... so if you look hard enough you'll be able to find someone that speaks english in Vientiane, Vang Vien, and Luang Prabang. Savannakhet ... maybe not so much. Stuff is pretty cheap too.

Just be careful in markets and shit. For the most part, noone is going to steal your shit, but with any where, if given the oppourtunity, someone who's crooked will take your shit.

I also suggest going to Laos via Thailand. Unless you befriend a Lao person, then you're golden

meh, Cambodia is 100% tourist-oriented if you stick to the touristy areas (Siem Reap)

land mines, haha. Were you trying to walk thru the middle of the jungle? You won't get blown up there unless you're really trying.

In phnom penh, try the russian market. Buy your realistic looking fake rolex and smashed monkey brain there. Use a calculator to barter, you punch in a number, show it to them and they will punch in a number. It looks like it pisses em off but you get a cool looking rolex for a few bucks... its all good.

Just yell "kampong siam" at the motodope driver when you get to phnom penh and relax at the beach. That's the good life. Think the official name is Sihanoukville, they changed it back in 98 or something. One time, I went right after the Khmer Rouge slaughtered those backpackers so lodging was cheap and the beach was deserted. It was great.

Oh, Bottled water ftw.

I might go back. If I do, I'd love to get a cheap kei car, buy some NGO plates from the russian market and travel around a bit more.

I had my most WTF moment in life in Savannakhet, I was crossing the border from Vietnam to Laos and continuing on to Vientianne on a 20h bus trip.. After changing 3 to 4 vans on Vietnamese side I boarded a korean minibus on the border and the fucking thing had a whole karaoke system installed inside so I had to suffer through a couple of hours of lovely lao folk badly sung to. I manage to fall asleep and I wake up, still groggy, while the bus was making a turn at a square and at the center of the square there are two fucking GIANT DINOSAURS CAST IN CONCRETE. Only later did I read how it's a significant archeologic location.

Condoms, condoms, condoms. Aids is not as bad as thailand, but still a big problem.
Prostitution is technically illegal, but... It's also everywhere. You can get in really big trouble if she is not 18 though, so get ID from her. Any big nightclub or bar will be a place to find a woman looking to sell herself.

Since the acurances is Tibet aver the last week, and the olympic games around the corner for China. It has become increasingly clear that the Chinese are becoming very cautios and in some instances down right hostile to forigners.
It seems that they are very conserned with the riot futage putting a damper on the already strained perseption of the games.
I would there for recomend that unless absolutly neccesary you stay out of China. The reports of the chinese suspicion of exspecialy caucasion and of course middle eastern heratige peoples are coming in. They are pretty messed up. If you think the chinese dont have enough pull to effect countries in thier immidiate vacinity. Think agian.
I would also recomend that you join in the boycot of the chinese summer olympic games. While this means that one will miss out on an oppertunity to see amazing compation the moral ramifications are to great in this persons opinion.
Plus as someone who spends a lot of tome in the dojos. I know personaly of two U.S. judo olympians. 3 greko roman/freestyle wrestlers. Plus on egyption Karate olympian who will not be taking place in the games unless changes accure.
Thank you. 4th generation

Because communism is worse for tibet than the fucked up religious system they have now? Majority of the population over there are pretty much slaves to those high up in religous order or to the rich land owners

Cambodia is lovely, but impoverished.
Go to Angkor Wat, it's amazing... But I was mostly there for volunteer work at a hospital.

Lol, fucking nothing. I was there for a few days while waiting for a Thai visa. You can get out of the town for some tire surfing/safari style shit/farms etc if you have a few days available but the town itself is shit. Everything closes early in the evening and the town itself is in a pretty bad condition. Some sightseeing can be done, major lolz++ for the main monument they have there, I forgot the name but the story behind is that they got international help in form of concrete in order to build an airport and they used it to build that monument. 4chan style or what niggerz?
Also, visit the markets, interesting shit can be found.
