I studied french for 3 years, with no interest in learning a language (I needed to do it as part of the English schooling system; well, we had the choice between french and german and I truely regret not taking german), so I didn't do too well and can hardly remember any of it. I went to france a few years ago and was able to ask for simple things such as directions and order food, which was rather cool.
Although I failed quite miserably at learning a language, this is my opinion on taking one on: pick one that makes the most sense to you, and has the less differences to your current language (english, obviously).
I thought I got a bit lucky by picking french over german, but I had a few friends learning german and they were talking about how similar it is to english, and how easy it was to pick up. I found the difference really off putting for me.
Obviously saying the difference between english and french was hard was quite a weak mentallity towards learning, which is possibly why I didn't do too well lolz.
I'm getting bored typing this and can't really remember my point; but:
tl;dr: Pick french, it seems way easier than russian, as it is a lot more 'samey' towards english.
