Sup /trv/ I am currently 18 and have traveled to china for two month in the summers of 2006 and 2007, now I am deciding whether i should live there or not. Both times i didn't want to leave and was super depressed when i came back. The problem with going there for a year is ive already taken a gap year from school and am not sure if i really have the time to take another gap year and stumble around on choosing a major like everyone else, I also don't whether ill really enjoy it like the last few times because it will be more like living there and less like an extended vacations. The positive side i'll probly really like being there and I can play a lot of Go(board game), which i love and i can learn a lot of chinese and just relax in life. What would you do in my situation.

You are a fucking idiot. I was just in Beijing and it has a huge underground music scene, punk rock, black metal and avant-garde. The contemporary art scene is thriving and just recently a Chinese painting sold for 8 million breaking a new record. Chinese TV has recently been producing some really cutting edge series, stuff like a really high budget period drama that i say, costumes were really well done and it wasnt cheesey like they've been done in the past. The chinese film industry is also booming. Oh yeah, not to mention that other 5000 years of culture they've had. Granted though, Chinese pop culture is definately a different kettle of fish to Japanese, but China is in no way 'culturally barren', to the contrary, it is far from it. Next time just keep your mouth shut to prevent your idiotic, uniformed thoughts from escaping.

>> Anonymous
>>20939
baaw a little more faggot. Contemporary culture of China nowadays is derivative and unoriginal, no matter how much of it it is produced. India, Iran or Venezuela also have a booming movie industry and enormous underground music scene, but the great majority of the culture produced there is appalling shit, even outside the big studios or record companies. Chinks need to understand that quantity does not equal quality. Chinese contemporary art is the only thing were you were somewhat right, but its only a small clique of cynical realists the ones who get almost all the international acclaim. You cant compare China to the culture powerhouses that the West and Japan are.

Ive actually seen some of those new revolutionary cutting edge series, and the acting, script, editing and direction of them are even worse than the most shitty tv drama we have here. Not to say they are also used for blatant nationalist propaganda.

Of course, nobody is denying historical Chinese culture, which is by far the greatest and most influential of all the Asian nations. The issue here is contemporary culture.

They're actually doing not bad for themselves considering how badly they were set back by the ironically named Cultural Revolution. Government censorship that continues to this day is also a very bad thing. The Japanese manga Death Note was actually banned in China because the government said it was a bad influence or some shit. Stupid things like that REALLY stifle creativity if you aren't even allowed to make something as "offensive" as Death Note.

The government will probably lighten up a little as time goes on though. Economic growth also helps the ability to produce pop culture by default. Within, I don't know, 40 years, I see no reason why they can't be on level with Japan.
>> Anonymous
>>20983
nothing in china changes in 40 years, it takes atleast 65 for something to really reach out in the country, beijing or hongkong may create some small cultural greatness

also, chinse food is quite crappy when compared to korean, thai or vietnamese cuisine, very bland and boring (with exeption of the sichuan region)
their cooking is mostly stews and boiled stuff because their kitchens are Germsheaven
>> Anonymous
Why are we talking about how stuff like a manga/film being banned is bad for their culture when the FUCKING GOVERNMENT READS THEIR E-MAIL AND KICKS DOWN THEIR DOORS FOR BEING DISAGREEABLE
>> Anonymous
>>20997

Yeah, seriously. The US may have the occasional book banning but CHINA IS CENSORING THE ENTIRE INTERNET.

Like, that makes me angrier than anything else. The internet is supposed to be this unstoppable force of communication, and China employs hundreds of people who basically read livejournals all day long and then make the bad ones disappear.

Oh, also they tortured and killed lots of people for doing Tai Chi.
>> Anonymous

>CHINA IS CENSORING THE ENTIRE INTERNET.

No, they're not. They're just censoring certain "subversive" parts of it. Not including 4chan, apparently. And the filter isn't that hard to circumvent, it seems.

>Oh, also they tortured and killed lots of people for doing Tai Chi.

When? During the Cultural Revolution? Well, then, to be fair, White Americans killed lots of Native Americans, for existing.

Fuck, if you think Mainland China has no contemporary culture, you've got your head so far up your ass you probably think that Arab nations don't have contemporary culture either.

There's music, art, film, theater, everything. Sure, there's censorship. But there's censorship in lots of places, and we don't go around claiming they have no culture.

Anyway, it's not as if culture just stops, even under the pressures of censorship. It's not as if a group of people, especially one as large and diverse as the Chinese, (including the minority groups, not just the Han) with such a great cultural heritage, suddenly stop producing anything of cultural worth and become a vacuum.

Not having exportable cultural products is the NORM in the world though. Just think about it. When do we ever give a shit about anything that, say, France produces? At least China has Jet Li movies and things like that.

There are only three contemporary cultural powers in the world today: The United States, UK, and Japan. Everybody else is minor.

McCarthyism? Do you have even the slightest inkling of what you're talking about? Denouncing card-carrying members of the US Communist Party in the upper echelons of the US government (as vindicated by the Venona Project in the early 90s) is not the same thing as the widespread shit the Chinese does.

To OP,

I would personally go to some other place like Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macau instead of mainland China just to see how you like living in Chinese culture. If you like it, THEN go straight to the heart of it. At least it's easier to get out of those places. On that note, make sure you have enough money to leave whenever you want. Otherwise you're fucked.

Japan a cultural power, get outside of your own little weeaboo world and realise most people dont give a fuck about japan.

>>21100

American brainwashing is quite strong, remember the mass hatred of all things french because they disagreed with the war in Iraq, but it is also more easily broken than that of the chinese/north korean style as it is just government pushing its agenda through control of the mass media, north korean (and to a lesser extent the chinese) government makes it a way of life, and has set punishments for those that go against it. Americans have more access to independant media so over time the brainwashing erodes as people have access to other sides of the story and can form thier own opinion.

China doesn't have exportable culture? So-fucking-what? Is the point of a people's culture so they can sell it to another group? No, it's not. Yes, "denouncing" them. By blacklisting them, so as to ensure they couldn't work. And putting them to testify to the House Un-American Activities Committee. And jailing them.

Yeah, just some harmless denouncing. Of people who held a certain political belief. In a country which prided itself on its foundation in "freedom."
