Gun Culture Anonymous
I heard /b/tards ransacked /trv/ so here's a remake of my previous thread. To recap:

So one of the first questions my Japanese host family asked me was if I had a gun at home (I don't). This kind of caught me by surprise and they must've assumed that since I'm a Chicagofag I have to protect myself from the coked-up crack dealer hordes.

Do many countries think the USA is some ubiquitous gun totting culture or is it just Japan's ignorance and insatiable love of American media that has created their own unique(skewed) perspective?

Please try not to let this degenerate into a "pro-gun vs anti-gun" thread but I'm rather more interested on /trv/lers thoughts on whether America feels like a gun culture to them (it doesn't to me).

i get so tired of this shit. Do you know any americans? Yeah, i didn't think so.

Our government is bad. Everyone knows that. But you have to cut us some slack - we were lied to. No one would've voted for the people in charge 8 years ago if they knew what was going to happen. Don't use our foreign policy fuckups as a referendum on the general populace.

Europeans have their own problems but because america is 'the last remaining superpower' and we are constantly so visable on the world stage everything we do is broadcasted and dissected. This 'post-american world' fad is a crock of shit. Ultimately, we're going to bounce back, and all you europeans stuck in the same place are going to have your heads up your asses.

Well, a lot of people forget that it is "gun culture" that actually created America. No guns=no minutemen=no revolution=Southern Canada. I lived in Japan for 4 years and I'd still rather have my Taurus .38 in my closet and an amendment that nixes illegal search and seizure. If these two things were nil, the rest of our rights would go to shit as well.

WWII happened because the Japanese military took over the govt in '32. The citizens did nothing because guns and swords were banned. The rest is history.

Just wondering, why do Americans not seem to point blank deny like a a child, that pretty much the rest of the world has a bad opinion of the country itself, and the general populous.

If i where to fathom a guess, it would be caused by main things.

1) Foreign policy. From the war starting to the low world aid given to environmental devastation that the USA is causing.
2) "MTV" cultural bullshit. I don't give a fuck about 50 cent or how many hoe's he has band and G's he's shot. Shame that know more about how he and his homies roll or the latest happening in desperate housewives than i do about what good the USA is doing for the world.
3) Usualy American tourists are dimwitted loud arrogant complaining chucklefucks. The amount of train rides ruined by having to sit through 20 minutes of comments like, "they call THESE flapjacks." and "it was okay, too small and quiet though." You just visited a historic village what where you expecting, a fucking rollercoaster!?

That loads of yanks are great people doesn't enter into it. Shit one of my childhood friends was American, and he and his entire family where nice friendly generous people. This kind of ignorance is just unbelievable.
Of course, the same retards will say, after he heard this criticism, that "we are ungrateful" and all this shit, because he's too dumb to understand what I just said.

Also, saying countries surrendered (whether you are talking about France or other countries) is not too funny for people who still have family who walked over corpses of their friends, who saw people being hung because of some resistance acts in the areas etc.

The American people are being fucked just as hard/harder by the American government as the rest of the world.

All the Americans that work way more than any other western country simply don't have time to see through all the bullshit. While the people that lead them take all their hard earned money and use it to fuck up the rest of the world. There is a huge difference between these two groups, the sad thing is is that the American workers simply can't do anything about it and are under the influence of the media, so they actually vote for a government that will fuck them over. For the rest of the world that seems like a stupid thing to do, so they assume all Americans must be idiots. Problem is, the rest of the world doesn't work half as hard as the Americans.

American society is simply said completely fucked, Europe's economy would be completely fucked if the government tried the shit they do in the US, because everyone would go on strike.

Living in America, west coast, I have to say that the whole "gun culture" thing seems to be a minority out here.
but also I'm defining gun culture a little differently. if a person owns a gun legally for protection, a part of work, or keeps in drawer at home because it used to be dad's ...I dont consider them a part of the gun culture.
but if they own a gun magazine (in b4 /k/ troll ITS A CLIP!) like Gun Lover's or some shit like that, it doesnt matter if they OWN an actual gun, they are part of the gun culture.

I'd like to own a gun. not because its a symbol of "being able to fight the government if the time comes" or because "its so cool man" but because I have the right to own one and because I see it only as a tool/weapon and nothing more.
Plus I'm a little paranoid because I'm the only guy I know in my apartment complex who is in a biracial relationship. None of my neighbors have come out and SAID "so whats it like dating a nigger?" but some of the dottering old people have asked ignorant questions like "does the difference of culture hurt your relationship?" and the asian parents down the hall immediately start whispering in korean/japanese/whatever whenever I kiss my girl in sight of them. So yeah, owning a gun to keep some secret KKK nutjob out of my place wouldnt be a bad idea.

Just a question : being French, I'm just wondering if you are proud to work that long ?
I mean France is in the top three highest *productivity* (please read this word and understand it) and was rated first in Europe over several years.
But we are DAMN happy to not work too long.

we can enjoy going out, having a family, having long vacations (5,5 weeks minimum ! Up to 7) etc...That's a great life :-)

I have to say I prefer work ambiance in UK and in some US companies though (too much hierarchy bullshit in France).

I do find my life rushed after working 40 hours a week, sometimes more when I do not meet an SLA (Deadline) at work. So it can be frustrating, but I do feel a little proud that I work so much, because I know that I am working, which is more than most people can say and in reality, in the states, a lot of people don't look for jobs, they suck the tit of the government and use my tax dollars to live, its more that I'm proud that I support myself than that I work so much, but in my opinion they go hand in hand.

Indeed, and it s the same here in France, except I believe we have much more parasites (africans are migrating in masses here...and their work culture is really not the same as ours).
we are proud of working etc, and also proud of sustaining our system and the social security and medical care (even if it profits to the parasites as well) , I just meant I'm happy I don't have to work 48 hours a week or more (I should add "anymore", I lived in UK for a while) , I can be proud of my 39 hours and the quality resulting.

I'm sorry, I didn't realise it was impolite to mention the fact that your country does some incredibly fucked up shit and has massive social problems.

Fact: you are the fattest in the world
Fact: USA financed Noriega, Marcos, Duvalier and countless other dictators
Fact: yes, you start retarded wars, Iraq for instance, you might have heard it mentioned in between Britney's custody battle and Paris' sex tapes
Fact: You have the gun homicide rate of a third world country.

The people of France have fought hard to get to this point, I think there is no country in the world where there are as many strikes as in France. So naturally, they're a lot more engaged in politics.

The US on the other hand has a history where strikers are taken care of with force by the corporations (carnegie and all that), and now it's simply seen as "communist" or whatever to stand up for your rights.

highest number of STDs?

the list goes fucking on.

you've hit 3 veins, one (obesity) that the rest of the world is catching up on, one (financing dictatorships) that every other major power has done -and most still do, and a final one that is about as irrelevant as the entire list of culturual "risk factors" you read above.

wait, come to think of it, most of these things are either irrelevant or, if we're gonna sit down and keep score like 8-year-olds in a "nuh-uh" "uh-huh" argument, are a complete wash.

Further, do you really think that the average American is unaware of these facts? If the answer is yes, you're a misguided fool. your energy is better spent educating Americans on how your country works, patience and understanding are the avenues to truely bridging any gaps between our countries. If the answer is no, you're pointing out irrelevent information for the sake of getting a rise out of someone-you're a troll.

Of course there are countries in the world that are worse(Russia, Chine), but the US shouldn't compare itself to that. Look at the press in continental Europe, it's really different than what you're used to in the states.

But this statement is not true. I'm reading a book about china at the moment, and china's many failures over the years has come from trying to adapt foreign ideas and ways of life, and their recent successes and sheer incredible economic growth has come about through having many times more socioeconomic researchers than any other country in the world which have helped put into motion this current state that they have, which is all based around doing what is best for china using ideas created by china because it is the foreigners which have caused their demise in the past. Of course they have a lot of moral issues going on like raping their environment and extreme censorship and stuff like that but it's besides the point. They are doing the exact opposite of what you said.

Obviously difficult to have a discussion while the /b/trolls are spilling into other boards.

OP, yes, there is an outside perception of the US as a country with lots of people owning guns, and few restrictions on the sale of guns.

As for US people who say "I need a gun to protect myself from crime", well, you are addressing a symptom, and I think you are fooling yourself. I feel safer in an environment where crime rates are low and where I can count on the police to, while not being infallible, do their job within reason, than I would in an environment with high crime rates and inefficient, untrustworthy or underfunded police, where I and many of my neighbours own guns.

By your reasoning the U.K. should be Utopia. Too bad even with all its restrictions it still has plenty of problems with crime. They may not involve guns but criminals are still going to use weapons.
Police arent there to prevent crime either. You cant count on them to be there the moment that something happens. Also, 1984 police-state is not a place I would like to live in.
Also, dont discount the US/Mexico border. Many things get smuggled over very easily. Making restrictions on weapons only affect law abiding citizens.
In a no-gun America criminals arent going to think, "Hey, I shouldnt have this illegaly smuggled fully automatic gun and commit this crime because this is illegal."

tldr:Too many illegal guns get smuggled over the US/Mexico. Criminals are going to continue with what they do. Gun control laws only affect law abiding citizens.

>>62143Too many illegal guns get smuggled over the US/Mexico

Your post is ironic because you appear to be trying to argue that Mexico is a source of illegal guns in the US, whereas in fact, the inverse is true. It is fairly difficult to obtain guns in Mexico unless you're connected with the army or the police or the right international criminal cartel. Many criminals are of course able to tap into such resources, but plenty cannot, and when they cannot, they turn to the US.

Mexican criminals have discovered that it's extremely easy to call a buddy in Texas, Arizona, or even the People's Republic of California. If you've ever crossed the border by land going to Mexico it's not hard to see why they do this. All the law enforcement effort is directed at traffic in the other direction.

tl;dr Americans don't need shitty Mexican guns, we can buy them just fine on our own. The Mexican government actually wants to stop the flow of illegal guns FROM the USA, but for obvious reasons their efforts are mainly limited to complaining to the US government, which brushes aside their complaints. If the right wing nutters' paranoid fantasy came true and the Feds tried to confiscate all guns, we'd have the ironic problem of trying to stop the re-importation of OUR OWN GUNS.

Try reading more and don't make up your news based on watching cheesy action movies.

However, after living there for a bit it started to feel like a second home and I was truly sad to be leaving a country that I never imagined I'd be going to in the first place. Seriously? California has some of the strictest gun laws in the U.S. People nickname it Kommiefornia for a reason.
Dont know about Arizona gun laws. I live in Texas and its kind of hard to purchase guns without the proper paperwork. Now illegal guns are rather easy to come by. Known quite a few dumbasses who bought them. Sure, there are plenty of gun thefts and those circulate around but I doubt there are enough stolen guns to go around like they do. I've known people with gang connections who have had fully automatic weapons in their possession. I was told that it was from Mexico.
I dont watch cheesy action movies and make conclusions from what I've seen with my eyes and read on the news. I've been told plenty of times a lot of guns flow over the border to our side. The border has lots of holes. Gangs over there apparently fight with some very heavy weaponry(So CNN says. Not trying to make it up.) to the point where police there are heavily outgunned. I doubt enough of that could come over from stolen guns originating in the U.S. considering there arent assault rifles in every house, etc.

This is a statement almost always made by people who lack and understanding of both the founding philosophy of the US and the real issues involving guns in modern America.

Gun control WILL NOT fix the problem. The problem is not that guns are available, it is that people commit crimes. The vast majority of guns that are used in crimes in the US were not legally obtained in the first place, and the vast majority of legal gun owners in the US have never and will never shoot anybody or use their gun in a crime.

Additionally it would be impossible to effectively ban guns even if it were the appropriate thing to do. All that you would achieve would be to remove guns from people who don't use them to commit crimes while they would remain available to criminals. Aside from the obvious, there is a large amount of historical evidence that shows when this happens, violent crime increases. The US has long borders that are sparsely populated and more than enough other domestic problems that we can't afford to completely secure them. Just like with drugs, making guns illegal would have little to no effect on their availability on the street. It makes more sense to permit ordinary citizens to defend themselves than to create a nation of unarmed targets for criminals who don't obviously don't care if guns are illegal.

ummm... you know when a cop asks you for license and registration they don't expect you to have that stuff stored in your mouth or armpit, right?

you also know most guns can't be concealed in your typical back pocket?

fucking christ, the level of ignorance and paranoia. sorry man, I don't really mean to insult, but shit it's just staggering.

>>61862...None of your wars has brought peace and stability...
I will agree with you that American involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan are unjust and most likely unwinnable. But are you actually trying to claim that no peace or stability resulted from World War II? Even Korea and Vietnam, while idiotic and unjust conflicts in the first place, have resulted in relative peace and stability in the regions. That aside, there are very few countries in this world that have not been involved in an unjust war at some point. We would do better to cooperate to end war through education and equality worldwide than to point fingers and whine.

>- Spend the money you are actually spending on wars to make your country 100% green...
Yeah the US spends a lot on the military, which is asinine. But we also spend more money on research and development than any other country in the world and contribute more articles to academic publications than any other country in the world (source: Science and Engineering Indicators, 2008, National Science Foundation).

>- Have some heart for the poor, including in your own country.
Again, contrary to what people outside the US seem to think, we do. Poor people in the US generally have it pretty good. We certainly have problems, but there are few people who are homeless against their will. People do not starve in the streets. We have a welfare system that, despite all its problems, manages to provide for food and shelter of those who take advantage of it. We have many healthcare problems, but any person can still walk into any hospital in the country and receive care regardless of his/her ability to pay for it. Almost all communities have agencies that provide free and low cost routine healthcare and psychiatric care to the poor. Additionally, according to the CIA World Factbook, in 2006 the US donated $23.53 billion in international aid, putting it at the top of the list by nearly twice as much as number two (the UK).

California may have tough gun laws, but we've got a ton of gun owners, too. Shooting's a huge sport here - lots of ranges, with vast piles of brass at the end of the day. Just jump through the hoops when buying and know the laws about transport, and it's off to burn up some ammo.

None of my 50+ guns commit crimes or threaten people... Foreignfags can go hit a cricket wicket or whatever you do for fun in places where you can't shoot.

OP here. Maybe America does have a firmly rooted gun culture because despite living in Chicago, I remembered I have done some casual skeet shooting. Didn't strike me as a weaponry thing, just a sport. Although I doubt you could do the same so easily in Japan...

Martin John Bryant (born 7 May 1967) murdered 35 people and injured 37 others in the Port Arthur massacre, a killing spree in Tasmania in 1996. He is currently serving 35 life sentences in Hobart's Risdon Prison. His rampage ranks among the deadliest of the 20th century.
