i used it on and off in europe. i also swear by it, but>>34022is right - a lot depends on the hosts. i have made numerous friends on that site who i value.
you can go through and pick the hosts you'd really like, and try to make real conversation with them to build some rapport, but as with most things, it doesnt always go to plan.
if you dont care who you stay with, you still want to plan a few weeks (1-2) in advance, as too early and the hosts will forget about you, and too late and you might not be able to get a couch. however in lots of cities there are kind souls who will take you if you need some place to crash - its just a matter of finding them (and luck)
the worst that can happen is you have to spend 10-20euro on a hostel.
