sap /trv/,

I plan to travel by greyhound bus from Indiana to Minneapolis Minnesota. Anyone ever travel by bus across the us or anything else? What are things to avoid look out for? ways to pass the time on the bus, and what are your horror stories or good things about the trip you took? I plan on taking one suitcase and I plan to take my computer tower as well in a box.

TL;DR - I'm traveling by greyhound bus from Indiana to Minneapolis MN. Tips? Stories? etc.. Tell me

Yeah, i've traveled across a country on a bus before. Watch out for pickpockets. I usually keep my stuff with me and not sleep, because i'd rather not get robbed.

Talk to people to pass the time. Sometimes, there's a movie on the bus. Go with friends. I usually just take a backpack and/or a duffel bag and sometimes my laptop, if i'm going for a week or more and the place has internets.

No horror stories really. Just weird shit. This one short lady who was cute until she smiled and she was missing half her top teeth. I could instantly tell she was a druggie. On a bus that was mostly empty, except for the driver, me, her, and some kid, she sat down right next to me so close that her knee was under my knee. I think she was waiting for me to fall asleep so she could fish around in my pockets. Didn't say a whole lot to me on the hour or so trip. She opened her purse and i saw a syringe in it. Asked me for some cash before her stop.

This other older lady who was cool but rather fugly was a cleaning lady in Antigua tried to get me to get off with her at her stop and come to her house. I don't usually do this with people i meet in developing nations. If she was hot, i would have considered it, but i was definitely not going to let her gum my dong that day.

Dude. Take Amtrak if you really can't find a cheap flight. That is, if you're just trying to get from origin to destination. Greyhounds can be kind of fun because everyone gets to know each other (eats together, watches movies together, plays cards, shoots the breeze, etc.). And you'll meet some of the weirdest, most interesting people you're likely to encounter on a Greyhound. Needless to say you can do all the same stuff on an Amtrak, and better because they have space to move around and socialize. I think the kind of crowd someone sick of the airlines is seeking can be found just as well on Amtrak as on Greyhound, and without so many degenerates/undesirables. But they're both interesting trips. Bottom line, what to do to pass the time on bus/rail? Socialize. There is no better opportunity. You're surrounded by dozens of random people who are all essentially waiting. A captive audience, and a bored one at that. All with unique life stories and experiences to share. Don't do the things you would do by yourself to pass the time because you are not by yourself, as many people assume they are when they get on mass transit.

Sounds awesome. Thanks for your input! I would definitely like to hear more from everyone if you have stories. I'm pretty excited, about it. Not going to be showing huge amounts of cash or anything like that.

On a short trip from Pueblo, CO to Denver, there was an old man (probably 90) sitting across from me who was wearing a vest filled on the inside with various sizes of corks, labeled and priced for sale. He also tried to sell me a shoelace for two dollars. Greyhound people are all the people you haven't met yet at school, work, or anywhere else.

However, I also have a friend who hitchhikes (female, cute, white, 19). She was on a Greyhound and experienced a similar scenario as the Antigua poster. Empty bus and a shady looking black guy sits down next to her, doesn't say a word for hours. He starts getting shifty and glancing around as the bus approaches the end of the trip, so she moves a few rows back and acts busy, spreading her stuff out on the seats. He follows to the row behind her. Bus stops and she gets the fuck off. She gets about a hundred yards from the bus and hears footsteps pounding behind her. It's him, looking crazy eyed and sprinting towards her while undoing his pants. She screams and drops to the ground just as he's about to hit her. He doesn't, as the bus driver notices the dude and takes off after him, dropping him and pinning him before he can get my friend. As other posters have expressed, some weird fucking people on trans-regional bus. Obviously part of the charm, but you get the bad weird people as well as the good.

I have more lulzy stories, but they're not from cross country trips...

Some dude got his head cut off by some psycho on a greyhound. Just hope you don't get raped in the smelly piss bathrooms.

Oh right I forgot. DO NOT sit anywhere near the bathrooms. They will smell, and they will smell hard. Look around you, look at all the people, and try to picture each of their toilet habits. If you can picture 150 streams of urine and 150 loads of shit making it into the toilet safe and sound, then take your chances. Someone on the bus has inevitably been living off a diet of fresh asphalt and molasses.
