Hey /trv/

I've decided to major in Linguistics, with a minor in International Business. I am already fluent in English and Japanese, but would like to graduate knowing four more languages. Russian is one, pick the other three.

Even if I have to buy books and teach myself, I'll just test out of classes if I can.

shit I saw this thread a few hours ago and was like "damn 5 languages? that's impossible". Then I coincidentally read about this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raphael_Lemkin
9 fucking languages (although I think the wiki's wrong that he mastered them all by age 14).
Guy was a huge influence on the international law scene (durr hurr) and basically invented the term genocide. If you ever become important OP make sure you mention your gratitude for "Anonymous support".

enjoy knowing english along with the basics of five other languages, and having no job when you graduate.

Hindi, Spanish and Mandarin. Power combo, although you might replace Hindi for Arabic

NO

dude, french is hard. its difficult to write well, its really inflexible as far as structure, and listening is tricky because so many words sound the same.
for example, i have studied french (albeit somewhat casually) for 8 years. i have spent the last 3 months in paris. i still find it difficult to understand people who are talking to me, because it is really difficult to picture the word on your head based on the weird spelling conventions.
i know pretty basic spanish (spoken, ive never learned it formally)

as a result of that i spent 6 days in italy, speaking with italian people using french, and spanish with an italian accent, sometimes translating for my friends. i have had very minimal exposure to italian. i had surprisingly few problems understanding people speaking.

tl;dr: french sucks and its pretty effin hard

Is Japanese as hard as everyone says it is, to learn?

60%? Are you kidding? Speaking English alone probably opens you up to 40-50% of the world. Chinese probably 70%. Arabic... up to 75-80%, and Spanish probably 95% or so.

speaking and understanding it isn't the hard part.
reading and writing is.

Like the other guy said, speaking and understanding is not hard. Japanese is actually quite easy to speak. It's the fucking writing system that puts it into the "HOLY FUCKING SHIT" category for language learners.

thats totally wrong.

also if theres any foreign language that non english speakers are probably going to learn its going to be english. so unless you are going to france, if youre anglophone it becomes less and less necessary to learn other languages, cuz everyone wants to learn yours.

god i hate french.
