hey /trv/
I have a plan I have been working on for a bit over a year now. I have always wanted to go to new york, next to russia and ireland, it is my favorite place in the world.
As for my plan, I have saved $9030 dollars over the course of 5 years of doing a mix of work, and generous relatives. I am 17 years old and I just feel like Getting away for at least a month without any contact with anybody I know (except for one of my really good buddies and girlfriend). My flight leaves at 2:51pm Calgary time, and i'm leaving my school around lunch time (saying that I have a dentist appointment I have to be at at 1:00) to take a taxi to the airport. I admit I have been inspired by into the wild. when I'm in new york I plan on operating under a different name (I already have a fake ID that says i'm a 23 year old named Gordon Rasa(I have a full beard, i'm not saying this to be a prick, but I do look alot older than my age.)
basically, I need advice from locals, or people who have been there on if what I have is enough.
My flight costs $522 total for the return flight aswell.
My hotel accomodations are costing me $5428.55 for 21 days.
I am buying a bike down there to get around the city. but i'm setting my transport budget at $900.
this all leaves me at $2179.45
Is this enough for somebody who will just be hanging out, stopping in to the occaisional store that catches my eye, taking in the city, maybe going to a brodway production, SNL (if i'm lucky) or perhaps a talk show?
I'm not going to be doing much, I just want to go to new york and get a job there for a few weeks just for the experience.

new york is a good city for entertainment and business just remember and I would suggest checking out broadway; the area around penn station, grand central and cenral park are nice also battary park and the docks area going facing towards the statue of libarty is nice.
tips:
-remember there is no such thing as making your own food in that city, restruants and take out is really all there is so account for that.
-dont stand in the middle of the sidewalk looking around like a dumbass, unless you like getting yelled at.
-US security in JFK and near most train platforms is heavy if you get caught with that fake ID (and im not sure what your doing about a passport) your gonna get in some deep shit.
-if you can take a train out to the east end of long island or way out north, the east end has some very good looking vineyards and landscape not to mention houses if your into that kinda thing, and up north you got some mountains and niagra falls
-if you get yelled at in new york dont take it like a lil bitch just yell back the equivalent of what you got and your fine
-dont make eye contact

I wish you well on your trip anon, dont get killed or sent to guantonamo!

i know nothing about costs and everything, but all i can say to OP is im fucking jealous. and tell me how it goes because it sounds fucking awesome.

too all you fucking doubters and criticizers out there, sometimes you need to live a little.

Yes, because living a little means spending 5 grand on a fucking hotel.

Op, if you want to live a little, go find a nice, reputable backpacker's hostel to stay at. You'll meet travellers from around the world and make some good friends and great drinking buddies. You might also meet a really easy Swedish girl.

That's what I call living, not staying in some shitty high-priced hotel. and 900 for travel? Nigga, please.

Sage for your underage.

Firstly, fucking sweet idea OP I hope all goes well.

I would reconsider spending ~$288 a night on a hotel. Stay in a hostel or move around a couple hostels. Shit even stay in a private room and it'll be sooo much cheaper and suuuch a better experience.

Good call on buying a bike. Buy a metro pass also, go to staten islad, bike down town through city traffic take a train out to long island and go to montauk and spend the day.

I'm curious, how do you plan on going through customs and everything through the airport? Also be careful with your fake ID with bars and shit. I've had those assholes take them away.

Good luck, send updates! For free computer/internet access go to the Apple computer store at the south western end of Central Park, much better idea to go at night.

You've WAY overestimatd your needs, buddy. Seriously, with cash like that I could be set for life.

But then, I guess you're not a hard-livin', hard-lovin' bad-ass dude like me.

Accommodation should have been sorted via a sublet on Craigslist, you could get a fucking penthouse in the EV or LES for $5000 a month.

That's easily enough money, but if you haven't booked already, please reconsider. Don't do New York until you're actually 21+, it's like Vegas, you wouldn't fully appreciate it yet.

You could have an epic once in a lifetime trip from London to the sea of Japan by rail, going through Russia on the Trans-Siberian Express for $9K, a journey that you could also make last 21+ days. If you did it on the cheap you could probably even add a few nights in London and a short stay in Tokyo before coming home.

Your idea is cool and I hope it's worth it if you go through with it, you're going to need to be the kind of person who isn't shy talking to anyone to get the most out of it. I just hope you picked a hotel below 14th St and not up around Central Park or something.

I've done similar things, never in a city though.

I spent almost two months in the middle of no where in the South of France, hired a car and went all over... drove to Monaco, Spain, all over the mountains.

Last year I went to Thailand for a little over a month, I didn't move around much, I found a really cheap beach resort well off the tourist trail and chilled with the locals and other travellers. Some days I could walk a few kms along the beach, find a spot and then not see a single person for the rest of the day.

Have you paid for the hotel up front? That's a serious amount to drop on somewhere that you're probably not going to want to spend much time, other than sleeping. Craigslist is a good idea for sublets, especially if you can pay upfront... that way you'll really get to experience what's it's like to live that life, plus you can have people round for drinks and meals without blowing your cover.

I've lived in Manhattan my whole life.

I've been to so many cities around the world and none can even touch NYC in terms of shit to do and convenience of getting around.

Living in NYC is expensive, but it really is worth it. I would definitely say its the best city in the world.

Protip: Spend your nights around the east village.

Man you don't want to go to Manhattan for 21 days, I went from London, England and did pretty much everything in 5. Road trip so much better kthx.

I'd strongly advise against you blowing that kinda money on hotels...

I travel over 250 nights / year, and most weeks of the year I spend Sunday through Thursday in either a hilton, marriott, or SPG property - so please understand that I know what I'm talking about when I offer you this advice!!

It sounds to me like this whole trip is about independence and self discovery - but you're setting yourself up for a very sterile experience!!

Look into the hostel/guest house route - you'll meet other travelers, people your age, people from different countries...

if you're trying to discover the city - or if you're trying to discover yourself, you're probably going to find that spending 3 weeks in a hilton in manhattan is about the same as spending 3 weeks in a hilton in LA, or in Seattle, or in Minneapolis...
