Stay out of South and East LA. The South Bay can be nice in spots, but it's as far South as you want to go, unless you're going to skip over all of Long Beach and stuff and just go right on into Orange County.
I recommend going to the Santa Monica Pier and the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica.
If you have a car, take a drive up PCH (Pacific Coast Highway/Highway 1) through Malibu and into Ventura county. Bring a map with you so you can cut over to the 101 at the end and take that back to LA.
If you're an artfag, check out the Getty Center. Nice museum on a hill overlooking the LA Basin.
If you like big fancy malls, go to The Grove. It's lolhueg and pretty nice.
Another must see is Venice Beach. Doesn't cost a thing to just walk around and see all the freaky people and take in the atmosphere. I'd recommend bringing a camera with you on that one. It's very touristy, so don't worry about safety.
As far as walking around at night, you're ok if you stay in West LA. Now, don't be confused by the term West LA, as parts West of Downtown are actually considered East LA. Basically, stay west of La Cienega Boulevard, and north of the airport. Those areas are pretty wealthy and lowish crime, so you should be ok. Just watch out for sketchy areas, you will be able to tell what these are simply by how disgusting it is. If you're along the beach in West LA, you're pretty much safe. I wouldn't do it alone though.
