Hi&sup ,
im going for a classtrip to saint petersburg in russia ,
i will stay there about 9 days.
well if anyone here was there anytime ,
what should i be aware of?
what shouldn't i do?
is it kinda too "flashy" when i wear fashion-conscious
clothes? cause i heard they would kinda reap my clothes off my body just to have them for themselves.
or are ppl there wearing this kinda clothes too?
if you have any more suggestions , pleaseeee tell me

thanks

don't worry. St. P is trendy and rich enough to not rip anything off of you.

ok , i just wanted to be sure =)
any other suggestions maybe?
>> Anonymous
yep.

Hermitage (duh)
Achtung Baby (awesome)
near Finnish gulf there are some nice little bars. and you can go nightswimming afterwards.

if you drive with a cab, always discuss a price before driving, don't pay after the "clock", they will fuck you up and take like 3x the price
>> Anonymous
>>53817
i will take aware of it , thx
>> Anonymous
St. Isaac's Cathedral, but be sure to follow the sign for the non-tourist side. They both lead to the same place but you pay half the price. Be sure to see petergof if you can. Its pretty awesome and worth a lazy afternoon trip.

Umm.. be adventurous with the restaurants. Caucasian food is amazing (Shashlyk (kakbobs) and Basturma are my favorites).

Where would one go, if he was looking for girls like in OPs pic?

The flasher the better, they don't really understand anything that doesn't say DOLCE & GABBANA all over it in giant gold letters. Bring your most oversized, outdated-in-the-west "celebrity" sunglasses, and get your hair styled up and moussed up before you go. Otherwise they will not really respect you, at least not until you open your mouth and reveal that you are not Russian, in which case they will be all over your dick.

Unless, of course, you are not European or American, in which case you will probably die. Also if you are a Jew, although you probably will not make it past the airport if you're a Jew so don't worry.

Ahhhh, Sankt Peterburg....
I was there for about a week back in '91 (right before the coup!). I'm sure a lot HAS changed since then - probably cleaner and flashier, for sure. Beware of the street gypsies, though (probably way more around now than there were then), and also be aware of all the hardcore-drunks that will be roaming around at all hours. The rest of the advice you've been given about being wary of stuff is well-said.

You might wanna bone up on your Russian-reading ability, 'cuz just about everything will still be in Cyrillic (except all the fashionable stores), so be ready for that. Take LOTS of pictures - it really *is* a gorgeous city, and if you're going soon, you'll get some of the better weather, too. Don't forget to walk along the Neva - stick your hand in it, I bet that even in late summer, the water will still be FUCKING cold and very very fast.

I envy you!
I'll have to go back one of these days myself...

Fuck, I haven't been to St.Petersburg in 5 years. I have an apartment there (used to live there for a few years when I was younger). OK, so it's on the outskirts of town but nevertheless.

Yeah, St.Petersburg is way better than Moscow and I concur with most of what's been mentioned. Just yeah, watch out at all times because even though it is a nice place, it's still considered the crime capital of Russia, so always use discretion at all time.

Question, please someone answer this. I'm Mexican-American . I don't look hardcore Mexican neither. Anyway, what would Russians think of me? I can speak a little bit of Russian (VERY LITTLE)

Future plans, future plans.

Pic related it's me.
>> Anonymous
>>54286

Introduce mexican food to them!! They must have awful interpretations of it.
>> Anonymous
>>54286I don't look hardcore Mexican neither

Based on the pic, you look pretty hardcore Mexican, unless your idea of hardcore Mexican is wearing a sombrero and singing narcocorridos at the top of your lungs while swigging tequila from a terra cotta flask.

Basically, anyone with hair darker than what we would call "dirty blonde" is a "nigger" in the eyes of a typical Russian. Most Russians will not automatically attack a nigger, but some will, so watch out.
>> Anonymous
>>54289

Based on fucking hair? WTF?

Just let them hear your accent and, be all nicely dressed .You'll be fine?

most likely they will think that ur a sand nigger. so yeah they have their accents, youll have your american one youll be different.

you're an idiot or a troll.

I've lived in russia my entire life before going to canada just for expatriate college experiences, and I've never been attacked by anyone, I'm blatantly asian looking and no one has ever touched me or said anything to me(not even elementary stuff because my school was diverse)

try telling things outside of things you see/read on the internet, and actually visit the country yourself instead of giving advice about countries you've never been to

the chances someone will "attack" you are the same as being attacked by a KKK member in the U.S, I don't know about you but I've been to the U.S numerous times for long periods of time and have never seen any of the such(then again I never went to the hick south like alabama or anything, doubt you can even find it even there)

>>54289
um I don't know if you know or not, but tons of russians have dark brown and black hair, they are not "niggers"

interesting.. I'm going to Moscow for a trade show but i have a couple of days to see shit. Anything specific to Moscow i should be aware of? Also is there any shit worth buying that you can only get in Russia? Will all the pirated software/random shit worth picking up on the cheap be inside GUM or will i have to go somewhere specific to find it?

Russia's a consumate shithole. Moscow is the biggest, most modern pile of shit in the country, and St. Petersburg is the pile of shit with a lot of pretty buildings and canals. Of the two, St. Petersburg was vastly preferred and cheaper.

>>53814
Seconding Achtung Baby...small for a city its size, but lots of fun.
>>54075
Russian women dress like whores. As in, so fucking slutty and cheap that they'd be arrested for indecency walking around an average suburban shopping mall in America. The men dress like slobs, mostly ratty knock-offs, tracksuits, and hunter's camis. Dressing fashionably will make you stand out, but no one's gonna steal your clothes.
>>54286
The more spanish you speak, the better. Otherwise, you could be mistaken for a Chechen, which would not be good.
>>54289
What people fail to realize nowadays is that Russia is fairly safe nowadays, more so than the U.S. in the large cities. It's still a fucking awful shithole, mind you, but your biggest problem will be pickpockets. I'm a nigra and I've been to Russia a few times. The only "problems" I had were incessant staring, and people talking shit about me all the time while foolishly assuming I didn't speak any Russian.

In short:
Russia's a shithole.
The women are hot, but only want your money/greencards and imho, are lousy fucks for the effort (better than American, vastly inferior to French or Italian)

Russians are unbelievably fucking lazy. Service is absolute shit everywhere. By extension, feel free to not tip.

Always take gypsy cabs over regular, and never pay more than 2-300 rubles for any destination inside the city.

Also, Russia's a shithole. Don't drink the water.

There's sweet fuck-all in the GUM, you're gonna have to look elsewhere. If you can find it, try "garabushka" or "garbushka' (I forget which).
>> Anonymous
One more thing, since I'm high and the China thread was really good.

If you're looking for hot women trying to hook up with Westerners, try the aforementioned Achtung Baby, Gryboedov, City Bar, and the best of all: The Other Side. The Other Side is an expat bar where I saw the most hot Russian women loitering about, clearly prowling on Westerners...especially Americans.

Um.. I'm not even going to get to how wrong you are about most of what you said, but I'll just go on to say that Russia is definitely not a shit hole, and that most if not all apartments have a water filtering system within St.Petersburg/Moscow, I drank the water and was fine.
>> Anonymous
since there there is already a russia thread here..

will I get treated in a particular way if I'm American? I didn't vote for Bush if that helps at all
>> Anonymous
>>54570
from my understanding, maybe the old pro-soviet people might bad mouth you or something, but other than that people would just find it interesting to talk to a foreigner, maybe practice their english

and if you're good looking then getting girls would be no problem

>apartments

Yeah, because most, if not even a slight percentage of people traveling to Russia FOR 9 DAYS get to stay in the modern apartments as opposed to hotels, you fucking moron.

Notice how in true first-world countries, there's no need to make distinctions as to what types of domeciles will/will not actually have potable water. Hence, Russia=shithole.

I can't believe someone's trying to troll me by claiming otherwise when, even if they had been to Russia, they clearly haven't spent any time outside of Moscow and St. Pete's. Otherwise, they'd be treated to delightful "first world" sights like pit latrines in what's ostensibly a restaurant, and the Russian idea of highway maintenance which consists of having itinerant babushkas clearing muddy water from the massive potholes cratering every stretch of road, or how nearly every stretch of infrastructure was built between the 30-50's and not since updated. Great fun!

Whatever. Don't believe me. Feel free to drink as much tap water as your heart desires and trea yourself to Russia's "world class" medical system. Don't forget to bring about 200 euro to cover "donations", btw.

Why is Russia a shithole? Because it masquerades itself as a first world country, while being in worse shape than Mexico. Would I discourage people from ever going? No, St. Petersburg and Novgorod are truly gorgeous and Moscow's rife with history. Does that change the fact that Russia's a shithole? No.
>> Anonymous
>>54570
Shithole guy here again.

We ate at a Georgian restaurant on the Arbat the day Russia went into S. Ossetia, and had no problems whatsoever. Although there were small, non-violent protests at the U.S. Embassy, no one gave us any problems for being American.

Besides, if you don't actually speak Russian, it won't matter because the people likely to make any sort of big deal out of it won't speak English.

American tourists are pretty well protected in the large cities. Resident ex-pats on the other hand.

>>or how nearly every stretch of infrastructure was built between the 30-50's

MKAD was renovated in 2001, I could think of many more instances of repairs

>>>Yeah, because most, if not even a slight percentage of people traveling to Russia FOR 9 DAYS get to stay in the modern apartments as opposed to hotels, you fucking moron.

If you're in a nice hotel, it will definitely have fine water.

You've obviously either never been there, or you went during the 90s, I've been to real so called "shit holes" and Russia definitely isn't one, so, stop trolling, I'm not the one trolling.
