If I'm from a smaller city, can I plan to move to New York in a couple years and start my life all over in New York and not end up dead in an alley?

I don't drink or use drugs, and, coincidently, I have trouble making friends and tolerating the friends I have. It occurs to me that it might just be easier if I lived in a bigger(much, much bigger) city.

Don't be worried too much about crime, I think crime's still pretty low in the city. The biggest issue is that costs to live in the city are getting absolutely insane and once-shithole neighborhoods are now falling victim to chic condo developments (not just in Manhattan, but in Brooklyn, Harlem, etc.) that drive up rent insanely. I'm sure there are some places you can still find that alright to live in and not extraordinarily expensive. Keep in mind though, it will still be expensive almost anywhere in Manhattan.

My friend from Queens says that what the city really needs is a new serial killer who targets yuppie hipsters.

I remember one of the first NYC threads here suggested living in Hoboken or Jersey City.

Yeah, I do remember that. I don't know much about Jersey, but if you don't mind living there it might present a good solution to the cost factor. I don't think there's much to do within the actual cities (could be totally wrong though), but it's not like you have to do most of your living there.

Insanely high living costs. The general rule of thumb is: closer to Manhattan, higher the rent. And don't even think of buying a house unless you're planning to live in Jamaica or other unsavory areas. Crime rates aren't that high, unless you're going to more backwater places in Queens, Brooklyn, or the Bronx. Regardless, you will get your bike stolen if you don't use a lock or keep it indoors. There's a great market for stolen bikes among(mostly Hispanic) folks. Taking the subway can be tough, but it's also hard driving around because finding a parking spot is a pain.

You're better off living in NJ. You get to visit the city when you have the time, but you get okay rents and not-so-shitty neighborhoods. You just need to get over the fact that it's New Jersey. (sorry for sounding somewhat bitter)

Long Islandfag here. Stay the fuck out. Seriously, even the boroughs of NYC on the island (Queens & Brooklyn) are worthless, soulless, wastes of matter, space, and energy.
