I know you're not happy with an answer like "It depends", but let me explain:
Coffeeshops come in various shapes and sizes, pretty much catering to every type of stoner out there. There's shops modeled after seedy brown cafés, with reggae playing in the background. There's loads of those. There's shops where you walk in, buy weed, and walk out. No hassle, nowhere to stop and relax. Pretty much a counter only. (The Grey Area) There's places with an oriental vibe, with tapestry on the walls, dim lighting and comfy chairs (the Dampkring, if I remember correctly) There's a shop which, besides a fine selection of pot, also has one of the best breakfast menus in the city, Barney's, which is a respectable diner in itself. There's even a hard-rock coffee shop, even though it hasn't been doing too well. (Blue.... something? The counter guy is an asshole, especially to tourists) So you see, it all varies hugely and some really are nice places to chill, like a relaxed-version of your regular bar.
