STAND BY... Anonymous
A friend's father said he used to go to airports and buy stand by tickets for really low prices. But this was back quite a few years I think.
I have some free time this summer, so I wouldn't mind waiting a few days, but is this process even done anymore?

yeah. in fact this is how i fly to visit family in europe every year. except that i have someone on the inside so not only do i always get a standby ticket no matter what day i want to fly (there almost ALWAYS empty seats or people who do not show up) i also get it for the low low price of $0 lol.

It really doesn't exist all that much anymore, do not expect anything out of American carriers because they discontinued it long ago. As for international standby flights its almost impossible as all airlines overbook coach sections on a system of voluntary and involuntary seat bumping. I would be very surprised if you could get a seat during high tourist seasons.
I don't have worry about airfares because the business I work for essentially pays for it.
