Population is expected to top out at 1.5 billion, and then begin to decline. Once the country develops economically, they won't even need the One Child Policy anymore, since wealth and low birth rate go hand in hand. For proof of this, just look at Hong Kong, which has the lowest birth rate in the world.
Overpopulation will be a much worse problem in India. They're at 1.1 billion already and have a much higher birth rate than China, with no population control policies.
I guess that's one advantage of China's authoritarian government; India couldn't do that if they wanted to, since it would be seen as infringing on peoples' freedom and shit.
