sup /trv/, tomorrow morning I'm departing for Shanghai, China for two months to study at Fudan University.

Any last minute tips/pointers/advice? I'll be living in the dorms, and will travel to Beijing for a weekend - not sure if I'll be at the Olympics yet.

OP here, should probably mention that I'm a US fag heralding from Minnesota.

Has /trv/ finally got an "asshole tripfag"? Well, at least it's a sign of a growing board. If he didn't want help he wouldn't have asked for it.
Are you going for a short study-abroad? I'm assuming you have some mandarin background?

Summer study-abroad term. Just one semester of mandarin - going to study language and culture. Courses taught in English.

Oh, ok. Sorry I can't be of much help to you, I was just planning my own study abroad after 2 years of chinese at college and wondering what made you pick Shanghai over Beijing, because I'm pretty split. ITT YOU HELP ME INSTEAD OF I HELP YOU

Why China? They have the worst human rights record EVER.
Do you realize that Beijing is EXTREMELY dirty? The air isn't even clean enough to breath.

Well, this was the best (only?) summer study abroad program in China that had Sino-US Relations as a course (my major). Of course, none of the other fuckers signed up for that course so they aren't teaching it but I still decided to go for the sake of experiencing the culture/learning the language in an immersion environment.

By the way, what is your major/career path?

Sounds like it should be fun, have a good trip. Check wikitravel or some shit for basic safety and all. Keep us updated if you can, or post when you get back; the shanghai branch of the program I'm considering also goes through Fudan, so lemme know how your experiences are! In b4 anti-china defense force, oh wait..>>39148
17 million people live there. They aren't all dead. Some of us aren't pussies. All countries have their moments of disgrace, as neither I nor nobody I know has suffered due to the PRC government and in fact China's standards of living are rising daily, I seen no reason at all to critique them. If anything, I feel they might deserve praise.

Sorry for that, this thread will now be populated by collegefag activists.

Do you have AIM or MSN? I'd rather not blog about it on /trv/.

Well, I haven't declared yet, but I'm leaning towards a straight up "Chinese Language" Major, and if there's any other BA I can get that makes me more attractive as a teacher to Chinese schools, I might double major up to get that. I'd love to teach English in China and actually be good at it, but anything that would keep me over there sounds good. Which is why I'm lleaning towards the IES program in Beijing (anyone else studied through IES to any country?); as their dialect/accent is the standard, I think it'd be the best for my Chinese, although, like I said, I'd love to teach Engrish anywhere in China after a graduate. What about you? My school doesn't have anything as specific as "Sino-American relations", but your major sounds pretty interesting. Are you hoping to achieve eventual fluency in Mandarin?

Dude, it's their country. If I'm respectful of their customs and laws, nothing will happen to me.

Stop acting like every country has to be the United States.

Yes, despite the fact that I've studied Chinese culture for months, I will somehow inadvertently piss them off and get myself killed. Those barbarians.

Speaking as someone who grew up in Beijing and has visited Shanghai:

1. Be safe. Keep your belongings close to you. Watch your wallet. (By the way, I'd give you that same advice if you were traveling to New York, or any other major city in the world.)

2. Be mentally prepared that you will see a lot of people there, due to the high population density. It can be mentally jarring at first.

3. Try to visit the colonial sector. It's like a mini-trip to Europe. Bonus points if you can make a connection between the architecture and why China is rather suspicious of the West.

4. Have fun. You'll be fine.
