I'm an American. I think it sucks here. I've been thinking about Sweden. It sounds nice. Do I have to learn Swedish to get along there? Is it a hard language to learn? I'm studying to be a microbiologist. Are there lots of science type jobs in Sweden?
>> Anonymous
If you aim to become grounded in another country, you must learn their language. Swedish is easy, kind of like German and English but easier. Pronunciation as well as understanding spoken language are tougher obstacles to climb, but other than that, it shouldn't be too hard.
>> Anonymous
And really, you'll do fine without learning swedish. At least in Stockholm.

Why do we see these threads every other week? If you have a question that isn't immediate, LURK! This has been answered many times before.

*You do not need to know Swedish to live in Sweden.
*Many masters degrees are offered in English in Sweden. Check yourself.

My cousin studied in Sweden for one year and said he never had to use Swedish.

I'm going to Sweden to study at Stockholm University for a semester. Everyone who's been there before me said that most swedes have a pretty good grasp of English. I'm still taking a Swedish language course though (for the fun of it). As far as the language goes, it's not too far removed form German, just expect to learn some new ways to pronounce new accents and letter clusters.
As far as science jobs goes, Sweden is one of the leading forces in the green technology sector, so microbiology can help you a lot there.

Isn't it the minimum of politeness to at least learn some words of the language of the country you're staying in?

yup

I'm a foreigner studying in Sweden right now. If you want to work here, you'll need to learn the language, but it's extremely easy to learn.

What's with all the faggot Americans wanting to come to Sweden lately?
>> Anonymous
Learn basic German first.

OP, i hope you don't look mediterranean or black, or like any ethnic minority.

most swedes are cool and all but there's a disturbing amount of socially acceptable racism in sweden.

>>81330
I disagree. I'm from Sweden, currently studying in the US. Even though there is some racism back home, this place is a thousand times worse. Then again, I'm staying in Cincinnati which is known for being a city full of racism.

Most people are friendly and speak English very well. And yeah, like people said, there are a lot of job opportunies in Sweden if you want to work with science.

No, it's a long story why I ended up here. I see your point, even though there are loads of nice people, the over-whelming catholic, republican, and rather racist sympathies makes me a little bit depressed.

Hey, I have a question:
Can they tell the difference between Persian and lets say Turk or Arab? If so, what do they think of Persians?
Do they know about Zoroastrian people?

I can't speak for everyone else living in sweden but my 2 cents...

we dont really mistreat any foroners, but most turks and the middle-easters are fucking idiots imo, i dont know if it's becuase of their Muslim faith because every muslim ive met excluding a guy from Somalia are real fucktards... the Christian's from that part of the world are nice....

no we cant tell the difference between arabs and all others down there...

what the hell is Zoroastrian people?

here again..

why would we know about a religion consisting of maybe 100k followers?

yep that's real likely... most swede's are Atheist's or Agnostic's...
God Allah or whatever.. WE DON'T CARE!

Zoroastianism is a Persian religion based on the teachings of Zoroaster (among others). It is mostly dead now.

Why sweden?

It's either light for 23 hours a day, or dark for 23 hours a day.

People are very nice, but they seem to give out that weird pleasant vibe; like they're almost emotionally dead...

It has a beautiful environment, but it's ALWAYS cloudy, except for a few weeks per year.

You might find it nice at first, but eventually you'll go out of your mind....

There is no joy in Sweden. There is only something in-between. The people have lost their joy to live, at all. They just.. Live. They work, they get a family, they do shit. But nothing.

There are lots of Iranians going to school in Sweden since it's less complicated than going to the US. I don't notice any real racism, but if you don't know Swedish, you probably won't spend so much time with Swedes. But there are many people from other countries in the masters programs.

PS. do you really hate your government so much to call yourself Persian? Everyone from Iran calls themself Persian.

Alcohol solves everything. In fact, after you drink enough, you won't even care that it's overpriced!

Iran = political division

To be honest, while I love to complain about how Finland is the darkest buttcrack on the planet, I still find that talking about the Scandinavian countries and their inhabitants as joyless, dour and boring is a somewhat myopic view. They're a subtly different lot from most of the western world - as obviously all cultural niches differ from eachother. It's just in our tradition to prefer subtle and subdued expression of emotion to anything temperamental. Also, we possess one of the more solid work ethics on the planet, which equally seems to enhance our appearance as boring squares to outsiders. These things take adjusting, and you should consider it just as obvious as you'd expect culture shock in Iraq. There's no place like home, as they say. If you look at it objectively, any of the Scandinavian countires are among the best places to live in apart from the climate, and the most of people who fail to adjust are people who either fail to give up locally unacceptable or counter-productive cultural and social behavior, or possess mental problems - ranging from homesickness, difficulty to relate to the locals and loneliness on to genuine disorders - which they unconsciously polarize towards the enviroment and the country.

Yeah, so, all in all, Sweden's a nice country. We Finns are just rather tsundere for you.

Very well, I'd say.

I don't think there's much straight-out racism here at all, it's very taboo to do something that seems too patriotic or slightly racist in Sweden. But there are definitely some social problems between Swedes and people from the middle-east. Even though we don't harass them or anything (I personally love most people from there and have many friends who come from Iran), people tend to stay away from them, which in turns leads to immigrants who only spend time with people from their own country and always speak their native language instead of Swedish. This kind of creates a big gap between Swedes and many immigrants, but I think it's more prejudice and cultural differences than racism.

>>81513
I see what you mean but I think you are exaggerating a whole lot. People are generally very nice, but less "loud" and less out-going than people from southern Europe or the middle-east. Once you've gotten a person it's just fine, but I guess people don't talk to strangers as much as in most other countries.

If you are visiting, you should definitely come to Stockholm. It's an amazing city. We have several other nice cities too, but Stockholm is by far the best.

I am myself studying biology at SU and this is what I would say :

Their seems to be science typ jobs here . The problem is that one year there might be a big demand for, lets say, biochemists and the next year a big demand for people with a analytic chemistry background.

There is no need to learn the language, for most parts, if you are from US & and some parts of Europe and speak English.

On the other hand, if you are, from say the middle east and still speaks fluent English, then some people might think that you should learn Swedish ...

It could be a problem getting a workers visa and ...

When it comes to Iranians in Sweden ... We have a lot of you guys here and the view towards you guys differ from person to person.

I cannot say how the Joe Average view on Iranians are but in general it seems that you are more likely to have an Iranian co-worker then and Turk or Arab one.

Swedes are like Dr Jekyll and Mr Fucking Hyde, before drinking they are calm, laid-back effective silent people, just doing what they need to do and doing it well not thinking of much else. Give them some booze and you got yourself a bunch of motherfuckers who make English Football-hooligans look like sophisticated aristocrats.
