Anyone been?

I spent 2 weeks there this summer, and thought it was one of the most beautiful, peaceful and tragic countries in the world, a must see for any avid traveller

How was the process of obtaining the visa?
>> Anonymous
easy as babyrape, just sent off my passport to the embassy with some form filled out and it arrived back a few weeks later.

I did have problems coming home though as I went through security in Ho Chi Minh cityairport I had left my visa in my bag that I had just checked in (duh) and had to go through a lot of shit to get through without it, including being naked at one point

See, my friends did the same then when they wanted to visit 'nam. I think they were in Thailand at the time and sent their passports to the embassy as well. But the thought of being in a foreign land without my passport, especially in one that is strict on the entry requirements, is frightening to me. I've heard of a few stories of embassies/consulates that are bumbling boobs and lose peoples' passports sometimes. It didn't unnerve you in the least to send your passport through the mail and be without it there?

one word: photocopies, as long as you you have a couple of copies of it then you will be fine if you ever get into a situation where you desperately need it
>> Anonymous
>>68164
I used to carry a copy of the photo page in my passport until I got my residency here. Are they cool with that in 'nam too?

More pics please!

yeah, when you check into most hotels they require you to leave your passport at the front desk until you check out anyway, so its best to have a load of copies

traditional tribal village we stayed with who gave us rice wine that blew our heads off and played us lovely music
>> Anonymous
How do the locals like people jumping around singing "ho ho ho chi minh"?
>> Anonymous
well in the south they join in, in the north they shoot you in the shin

Ha Long bay, one of the most amazingly beautiful places on earth, we took a boat through all these limestone formations that go on for miles and miles, stopped at some caves then took a canoe trip to...

Vietnam is awesome really, i highly recommend you go before it becomes some touristy hellhole.

Honestly, I wouldn't stay in those hotels. Passport is a bit too important to me.

or if you go to Cu Chi tunnels you can fire ak47's, M16's, M30's, M60's, M! carbine, Colt 45's and many more all for $1 a bullet, good times, spent about $60 down there
>> Anonymous
>>68200
Isn't it supposed to be the reverse?
>> Anonymous
>>68208

no the North was the side he led against the south and the Americans, the more north you get the more communist it is, thus the more they support ho Chi Minh and his "minhions" ha ha haaa ha aaaha
>> Anonymous
Am going there next week for 3 weeks.
Going to Hanoi and Nha Trang, any advices ? ( first time ).
>> Molon Labe !OWRNsS8xeo
>>all for $1 a bullet

That's a ton...

Most of the firearms you listed are chambered for cartridges in the $0.25 each range.

If you're firing full-auto at $1 per, as you would be with most of those, you'd be going through a fortune...

How was the language barrier? Did you have somebody that spoke Vietnamese (or, even, do you yourself speak it?).

Or did you just get by on common gestures and the odd phrase here and there?
>> Anonymous
>>68210
Which, was the source of my objection to the legitimacy of the claim in>>68200, which claims the contrary if I understand correctly
>well in the south they join in, in the north they shoot you in the shin

>>68228
they're amazing out there with language.. everyone you'll talk to (hotel staff, tour guides, shop keepers etc.) will speak reasonable english. we even met this old man who spoke like 7 european languages.

>>68216
I *think* it was nha trang, but theres a tailor district around there where you can get really nice tailored shirts for $4 a pop. the suits are abit crap though. Also you can go fishing there.

>>68207
Is that you in the picture? Did you get alot of people staring at/trying to touch your ginger hair?

Also, can't beleive noones mentioned this yet, beware of sitting outside in the north. You'll get fucking pestered (literally) every 5 minutes by old hags trying to sell you their wares (cheap lighters with pictures of the world trade center getting blown up). Its kind of annoying at first, but after a dozen of them who'll hang around for 5 minutes going "you buy, verrr good" you want to commit homocide.
>> Anonymous
>>68232
ok sorry i thought you meant you would be singing it in a derogatory way, but i guess you meant in a supportive way?

>>68216
hanoi is really good, nha trang is not as good as everyone says, the beaches are very dirty, and the town can be quiet dangerous (look out for pickpocket women, they surround you, act like they all want to fuck you then steal your shit) saying that, off shore diving is amazing, there are lots of small islands to go to, but really in 3 weeks you could see a lot more than those 2 places, i managed to see pretty much everywhere worth seeing in 2 weeks but that was with a guide.

>>68228
as i say above, i was in a pretty small group and we had a Vietnamese guide called Linh, he was one of the coolest guys i have ever met. but when we wernt with him talking to people wasnt too much of a problem, ok you cant hold a political debate with locals but buying stuff in shops, ordering food/beer, or getting directions/motorbike taxis is easy enough

I had a couple of people pull the hair on my arms but they were more interested in my DC's, literally everywhere i went people were staring/pointing/laughing at my trainers, I guess because I was the only person in the country not wearing sandals
>> Anonymous
>>68239

oh and as for the tailored suits and shirts etc i think you are probably thinking of Hoi An, its one of the most beautiful towns in the country
>> Anonymous
>>68249
YES! that was it.
>>68249
As for the shoes...you gotta admit, DC's look pretty spaceman. Imagine going back 80 years to anywhere in Europe with them.
