I'm on Crete every summer and if you don't act like an asshole tourist you'll get along nicely. Except for the old people everybody speaks sufficient English so you're not fucked. Be polite, maybe try ordering in greek, always gets you some smiles. If you're into partying and bullshit the northern coast is what you want, if you're into going on a vacation the southern coast is your friend. Also: long pants in the evenings. Tipping is encouraged and will give you better service the next time you're in that bar/restaurant. Don't overdo it, 10-15%. Also: old people sitting in front of their houses are greeted when you pass them. You can find the right phrases in any insta-greek book or the internet. Generic greeting: "???? ???!" (yah-sas)
