Opinions on Rio de Janeiro? One of the possible destinations I'll be going to.

Pic related, it's the hotel I'd be staying in (hotel Mar Ipanema)

It's a lot of fun if you're careful.

Always carry a photocopy of your passport or a driver's license. You need ID but you don't want to lose your passport.

Always carry enough money to get a taxi home. If you can get a belt with a concealed zip, this is a good idea. Normal money belts will help a bit with getting pickpocketed, but most thieves know to check for them. Carry big bills hidden away and about thirty reiais in your pocket or a cheap wallet. That's enough for food etc but not so much that it will be a big loss if you get robbed. I should add, I never got robbed in over a month there, hanging out in some iffy places. Just be smart, don't walk around by yourself alone at night too much, although Ipanema is OK more or less.

Check out Lapa (on a Friday night) and Santa Teresa, go to a funk party, go to a samba school, fuck some hookers from Help if you want, eat churrasco, go to the football, have fun!

the favela tour is interesting, and it's good to go to the soccer with these guys because you'll be with a group and your transport is organised. Brazilian soccer games can get a little bit crazy.

Wow thanks, that's a far more constructing and helpful post I could've ever imagine coming from 4chan.

Rio de Janeiro is full of dangerous & violent negros. Make sure you carry a gun with you at all times.

where can I find this "Help"?

Help is on Avenida (sp) Atlantica, right opposite the beach in Copacabana. You really can't miss it, massive sign. I never fucked any of the girls because I was already hooked up with a girl there (long story, but she would have found out) but I went there with another guy to check it out. There are some AMAZING girls in there, all freelance, you can negotiate a price and take them back to your hotel. Just be careful with your valuables, put them in the safe first!

Also, don't buy drugs on the street, and if you do GET OUT OF THERE FAST. It is very likely they will run straight for the cops so they can search you, find the gear and get a bribe. Don't carry any kind of weapon, if you get searched you're fucked. I was searched when I had a swiss army knife, I had to bribe my way out of jail. Rio cops are scum.

No. Do you want to get into a knife fight with a gang of 14 year old crackheads who've probably killed people before and are riddled with AIDS? Give them the money for fuck's sake, that's why you don't carry much in your wallet.

Don't travel there. Save more money and go to buzios instead.

Unless you want to be robbed, raped, kidnapped, or simply harrassed by black prostitutes everywhere you go. If you do go to Rio, don't get away more than five blocks from the touristy area.

That's a bit harsh... I had fun in Rio. I'd say a week would probably be enough if you don't have any other reason to be there mind you. I liked Salvador a lot too, although the beggars can be hard work.

I was in Rio twice and I went around with the family I was with and it was all good. I think it's pretty fucking obvious that you don't go to the favelas and you don't walk around after 11pm or before 6am around the streets, alone.

Other than that it was a lot of fun and a lovely city! Just follow your common sense, take a personal tourist guide or contact someone you already know there to show you around. It will be very helpful. A majority of the people are nice and are like you and me. I'm going there again this summer. Have fun and watch yourself!
