I'm going to Kuwait for a week to visit my father (teaching firefighting as a private contractor to the military). Kuwait City, any caveats?

If you're not a citizen, don't expect any preferencial treatment. Citizens get everything for free...you won't. Plain and simple.

That doesn't help. Anything normal in the US that might be rude/illegal there? Any tips, anything?

yes...everything you do in the US they pretty much hate unless they themselves are doing it. Basically you existing is rude to them. Kuwait may look and seem nice but they really really do not like any foreign influences there, and there have been increased reports of growing tensions from radicals who wish to kill foreigners, especially American contractors. Although there is a sizeable appreciation from some Kuwaitis who do like the influences we and many other countries can offer them, the majority is still very theocratic and deem much of the outside world as immoral and indecent. I've been there a few times and I tried to be very understanding of their cultures and customs but I was still seen as a "Western Demon". My advice is to watch your back and pay attention to the curfews if they still have them. The Kuwaitis don't screw around and they are definitely not understanding...
