I live in toronto and I'm in highschool (yes, underage) and am planning on being a pilot. Im thinking of taking the seneca degree for aviation, but i was considering going into the airforce after that. What do people with experience think?

And yes, i can't find any other board here in 4chan that would be suitable for this question

Do it. They will send you school for free. In exchange, you must work for the Airforce for a short period of time afterwards.

Why not RMC?

I have a friend in Seneca's aviation program, and they graduate as fully qualified commercial pilots with plenty of hours logged by the end. But it is very difficult; many of the courses in the program are identical to those offered in university level engineering courses, and you have to maintain a high average in your first year in order to progress to any actual flight training.

More importantly, major airlines are scouting graduating classes from Seneca, such as Air Canada and Emirates.

As for the military, make sure you have a perfectly clean bill of health unless you want to fight through mountains of bureaucracy to get in. I tried to join the reserves as a sapper last year, but as I found out a mild peanut allergy and mild asthma were more than enough to keep me out (the peanut allergy is non-life threatening, and my asthma does not affect my athletic ability, nor have I had an episode in over 10 years).

Hope that helps.

yeah but if Canada is like the USA, there are peanuts in pretty much all of the rations.

Cause i was thinking timewise, it would be easier to get into an airline if i went into the air force. So, seneca's course is enough to get you up fast already?

Possibly. The airlines are obviously going to give offers to the top students first, then work their way down. But more airlines are expressing interest in the program each year. So your chances for fast tracking are pretty good if you can get good grades and show good performance in flight training.

Keep in mind, no matter which airline would pick you up, you're probably going to be stuck co-piloting Dash 8s or CRJs for several years before being promoted to something bigger.

i thought that top students were only scouter for flight instructing jobs after graduating, i guess i was wrong. So they scout fresh-out-of-college students to fly CRJs and -8s already?

Yes, of course. but what would be the normal age to be copiloting international flights? I mean for someone who is decided on aviation already as their career, not career-switch people

The Canadian Air Force is awesome. It's more laid back than the USAF National Guard.

I'm a pilot and I work with many people who have gone through seneca's program. The real problem with them is that they take a shitload of your money and give you an extremely strict set of dates to accomplish your licences. If you cancel dates or fail tests, your out, no questions, no chance to redeem yourself. I've been through commercial diplomas and such and my advice is to try doing it on your own. After all, you don't really need a commercial diploma anyway, just 45hours of some sort of ground school.

Oh, and about the military. Its cool getting a chance to fly jets and all but heres how it really breaks down. First of all, you have to get past the medical examinations, then comes the basic training. If you get through this, you then have to write examinations well enough to even have a chance to get into an aviation program. Then comes the barrage of tests in the program, results of these tests are broken down as follows:

at the end the class is broken down into fifths depending on how well you've done. The first fifth gets to choose plane slots first, so if your not in this category, your not getting a fighter. The second ground chooses next, then the third and so forth. If you end up in the last group you may either by flying freighters, or nothing at all. And even if you do get a slot, fighter planes never fly anyway. So have fun doing nothing.

OP here. I'm not really into the idea of going into the military for 8 (?) years which is mostly away from my family. So yeah, as for the seneca program, im thinking about it since i want to progress up the aviation ladder fast.

Just my 2 cents.
