Anon in need Anonymous
Hello /trv/, I am in need of some advice. Very soon I am going to be homeless, I am too broke to be able to afford rent and can't seem to get a job.

What I want to know is how can I move around from city to city for free or very cheap.
Also any general tips on how to survive out in a city if I am homeless or ways to make money that do not involve a job.

One last thing, which city would in Texas does /trv/ think I might have the best chance of getting out of poverty in: Houston, San Antonio, Austin? Or should I just get out of Texas?

Thanks for your time, a fellow anon in need.

I don't know what the fuck to say. I'm so sad. I'm not an amerikkkan so I don't really have much useful information. Join the military maybe? That's what I would do.

I've thought about it, I know it would at least solve my current dilemma, but I don't want to be someone's slave dog, and I hate the government.

If things get worse though, I think I'll have to do that, until then I'll try anything but that.

You can kill a stranger who lives alone and has no friends, then take his/her identity. Half of those guys in /b/ will probably meet the 2 requirements. The other half lives with their parents.

If you're able to kill a retired person, you can even live off his pension.

otherwise, try finding work in some gay bars or something.

OP, don't you have friends/family/anything? Get support from them until you are able to live by yourself. As much as it 'sucks', that's what they're there for. If you can't do that, join the army or some related organization.

OP how old are you? You could probably just go back to school for a couple years and live off the loans and get a campus job. then use that degree for a better job. Or use your comp skills for money.

Fuck it though, being a vagrant sounds kinda badass.

As a side note I think mexicans are going to undercut you for cheap ass labor so you may want to go further north.

Yup. I'm sure it's a hard life, but it's also pretty cool to have that freedom.
>As a side note I think mexicans are going to undercut you for cheap ass labor so you may want to go further north.
And you're 100% right, where I live it's mexican central, they pretty much got higher priority due to their cheap labor shit. I want to eventually make my way out of Tx, but for now Tx is all I know.

Where can I get more info about this stuff? I know for sure there's plenty of stuff to apply for, there never seems to be a shortage of knocked up girls who apply for government aide and all that, not sure if I could get the same type of assistance, I don't got any kids or anything.

1. Food is free. Food banks will provide more than enough food for anyone in need.
2. Being young is a huge advantage. You can take advantage of youth drop in centers which can provide a place to relax, meals, even clothing for free.
3. Shelters. This is pretty obvious but shelters are always an option.
4. Squatting. If it comes down to it you can get by by either using an abandoned building or sheltered alleyway/area as a place to sleep.
>> Anonymous
>>46966
Bathing is actually not that hard to find. Most drop in centers and other services have showers available, along with soap and shampoo.

I'll add one to the experience in the suck job market:

I just graduated from university and haven't been able to find a job. I've probably applied to about eighty different jobs and been on twenty interviews. It's pretty bad. Even the temp agencies that I've talked to aren't looking to place anyone right now. It's not like I'm one of those kids with zero work experience either; I know some of them and they haven't even landed an interview, let alone a job.

If I don't get anything by the middle of the month, I'll look into the towel folding, anon. It probably beats retail.

I was homeless for a little while, and I'm actually familiar with the Brave New Traveler site (it's pretty helpful). Texas, I would assume, has a myriad of ranches and farms? I'd look into that. It can be backbreaking work, especially if you've never had to do hard labor before, but it's also good in other ways. Life on the farm is very simple and "honest," and you feel like you earn every penny you make.
>> Anonymous
you're maybe being a little unfair about the military, anon. if the idea of traveling frequently and being on an adventure (as anybody who willfully becomes a vagrant seems to want) appeals to you, maybe consider joining the navy and going on a world tour. they pay you, so you aren't anyone's "slave," and after you're done they'll pay for you to go to college.

my cousin's in the navy and loves it because he gets to travel so much. his goal is to bang a chick in every town he ports.
>> Anonymous
OP here:
>>47165
No. Just no.

>>47175
I know what you mean.

>>47188
Yeah, there are lots of farms, fields and ranches in some parts of Texas, I used to live in a farm city, I have thought about maybe stopping by one and earning some cash by working the fields and what not.

>>47191
Yeah, I know it can't be all that bad, but for now I want to try to at least survive without having to resort to that. Maybe later on, after a few years I might consider joining the military. But not yet. And your cousin is quite ambitious lol.
>> Anonymous
>>46747
Stop submitting. You have to go in person.
>> Anonymous
>>47216
I do go in person, I go the the place get the application, and fill it out on the spot and hand it to the manager personally in some cases, I always tried to make the best impression I could. But most managers in my area are cunts who only hire they're personal friends/family.
>> Anonymous
Having lived in all 3 of the cities OP mentioned, I advise that he think about where he wants to live and what he wants to do, rather than just pick a place because it seems like it might be easier to find work. The problem isn't really finding work, though if you're desperate, Houston's probably the best as it's rolling in money now from high oil prices. The problem is that there is a lot of shit work out there--exhausting, dehumanizing, low-paid and going nowhere. You want to get off of that treadmill as fast as possible.
>> traveling while broke pete
You could hitchhike. Stay as cleaned up as possible, hair cut, not wearing trashed clothes. Make sure to have a backpack, or bag. Use a sign. Stand in locations where drivers can see you easily and have a place to pull off to pick you up.
Don't get in cars with drunks.
Carry a knife, or pepper spray.
At times you can catch metro buses from town to town, usually don't cost much.
be carefull
>> Anonymous
>>47341
one of my strategies was to go to the mall and get an application at every single store. also, YOU HAVE TO CALL THEM BACK WHETHER OR NOT THEY CALL YOU. This is VERY important,it lets the manager or whoever know that you seriously want this job. Just call and inquire as to the status of your application.
Also, have you looked in your local Craigslist for jobs? this may be a weird suggestion because I assume that you are male, but you could apply for a job as a live-in nanny. I don't know if they would hire you, but rich people pay LOTS of money for childcare, and you could wind up with long term employment and a place to live.
>> Anonymous
Got an update for us OP? I was wondering how you are doing.

Some advice came to mind:

Go ahead and pack a travel bag, I would suggest sturdy clothes that will last. A electric shaver or a regular one. Stock up on soap too.

You've probably already thought of this, but I thought I'd throw it in there just in case.

>>47165

>> Anonymous
You're not truly destitute if you can run around with so much pride.

You seem severely misinformed about your options, instead preferring to mope on the fucking internet. No sympathy you pathetic nigger.

http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/unemployment-insurance/index.htm

Unemployment Benefit that you can apply for if your last job was lost through no means of your own. Check out what Texas' definition of 'no means of your own' is, and if you don't fulfill that, lie and hope it flies.

You register through work for them and you need to show initiative in order to get the jobs they will refer you to. You are above nothing if you consider homelessness your inevitable option. Those in shelters will be referring you to this too.

You will feel alone in your jobhunt, that is because despite what support is on offer, nobody will place you in a job but you.

Go down and start processing yourself for unemployment. They may even have emergency benefits available to prevent you losing your accommodation.

Stop being stupid, prideful and full of angst. Do it, faggot.

>>47427
Yeah, I got stuff for self defense, just in case. I had an idea though, I do have a bicycle, should I hop on that and try to see how far I can get or just ditch it and try for hitchhiking instead? ... or both?

>>47453
Yeah, I know you gotta call them to check up on your application, and I did that for several jobs. They even told me that they would call me back the day after I called, but they didn't so I call instead and the same thing happens. Yeah, I've checked craigslist in my area, very few listings and most I am unqualified for or they're obvious scams. Though that nanny thing is a pretty good idea, not sure if I'd be able to land one of those jobs. I'll keep it in mind though.

>>47534
Thanks for the concern anon. I have been trying to gather my stuff, making lists of what I'll need and using what money I have for supplies and whatever else I'll need.

You are right about me being misinformed though, I did not expect nor plan for this ahead of time like I probably should have. I have heard of unemployment benefits, though my last job wasn't exactly legal, and I was paid in cash, so there are no record of me ever being employed there. Is there anyway I can work around that? Also, I'm not here for sympathy, just advice.

>>47554

Go to West Texas. The cities of Midland and Odessa are right next to each other. Their population is about 100,000 each with a metro area of around 250,000.

The oil economy in that area is booming and it's easy to get a job. The best paying jobs are in the oilfield. You have to pass a drug test though. If you can't pass a drug test then you have to work in the service industry - there are help wanted signs everywhere.

The Houston economy is also doing well with the high oil prices but it's not so concentrated as in West Texas.

If you are black, I'd say stick with Houston. You'd stand out in WT. If you're hispanic you'll blend right in.

I know a guy who would go to low-end auto auctions when he needed to change cities. He would ask for work transporting cars to the city he was trying to get to.

Need a driver's license (I don't know if commercial is necessary) and be skillful enough driver to tow another car behind you (apparently they usually drive one, tow another). I don't know about insurance either.

Thinking about it, it might be easier to hook up with a moving company for a one-time move to the city you're aiming for. If you pick a city with a decent economy, people are probably moving in that direction....

Hate to sound like a liberal hipster fag, but I was listening to a segment on "This American Life" where these two friends decided to become homeless after they weren't able to make ends meet, in New York. They seemed to have some fun with it. Food is very easy to come by, and they said they actually gained weight while they were homeless. There's plenty of soup kitchens, etc. Plus, I guess if you find churches or places that provide free clothes, you have fresh clothes constantly. Being homeless can't be that bad, as long as you know what you're doing.

I'm not in as dire straits as you, OP, but I'm definitely being driven rent-and-expenses out of an apartment in the Northern Virginia area. Not that bad? Maybe for a few months to a year it's not that terrible. I live in downtown Atlanta and I've talked to hundreds of homeless people, many of whom have been homeless for years and years. Those who seem to have been homeless for a little while all have one thing in common - they are fucking gone from reality. One too many cold nights with no heat, maybe. They rant, they rave, they fight over space with other hobos, a lot of them have some kind of disease or disfigurement that they can't get proper treatment for. Their lives suck, OP. Maybe being homeless would be romantic for a couple of months, but I hope you're not trying to become a lifelong hobo.

Not quite... I do wish to someday settle in somewhere and start a new life, but I've been giving it some thought and I think for now since I am young and healthy, I can go ahead and sort of drift around from place to place just checking out cities, areas, and what not. Might as well.

This isn't meant to dissuade or frighten you, but please understand what you will be getting yourself into and be sure that you put in adequate planning ahead of time.

Come to South Central Louisiana.

Everyone is fucking hiring. The economy is still in an upward climb. Housing hard to find around here though, because everyone wants to get the fuck in, but there are apartments to be had.

Get a job working offshore or something with oil. They pay great, and are always looking for strong young men to work.

If you don't want that, just about every restaurant around here is looking for help, including a couple of sushi chefs wanted.

I'm telling you. Louisiana might be hot as fuck, but let me tell you, the Economy in the Lafayette/Lake Charles/Baton Rouge area is awesome as fuck.

But get here fast, because I don't know how long it can hold out.

Some jobs, like working in a remote hatchery or being a wildland forest ranger provide housing. If morel mushrooms grow in your area, they can be sold. Of course, that has little to do with living in a city. You could be a housekeeper or sitter. Check on Craigslist for that.

What are your skills, OP?

Haha, oh wow, my first post deletion! It's been far too long in the works.

Just checking back to see how that pride is filling your stomach and providing a roof over your head, OP.

Go apply for AmeriCorps. You'll have to live for cheap but you get free health care and if you finish the year out, they'll give you 4k for school which should atleast you get an associates at a community college. Plus it looks good on apps and it'll help you get a job. If nothing else you can do another year after you get an associates so you'll have a little money to go to a state university and get a bachelors.

I cannot really give you any good advice op, but good luck.

     File :-(, x)
OP here one last time...
Alright, well today is the day I cancel my interent though I'm not necessarily leaving yet, not for about 2-3 days.
Thank you all for your help and contributions. I now feel more informed and confident about what I can possibly do, and where I may go.
I will try to stay alive as long as I can and to not be a hobo for too long. If all goes well I'll find myself a job somewhere and can start again, if not, then that's just how life goes.

dude, just use a bike for transportation. try to make money by doing odd/temporary jobs like construction, unloading trucks, mowing lawns. just keep it simple and you'll be fine. or you can do what i planned a while back(if you live on the west coast) and just bike north and find shit to do.
