Ausfag here. Planning on spending 12 months in South America next year.
a) Is this a reasonable time frame to see pretty much everything?
b) How long should I be looking to spend in each country? (inb4 over 9000 weeks)

If you're black, don't go to Sudan.

Brazil is really big but there isn't too much to see besides great beaches and hot women. If you like beautiful natural spots with great scenery, Argentina has pretty much every climate. The south has glaciers, the north has jungles, waterfalls, mountains, etc. Also go to Peru for Machu Picchu, that place is awesome.

You should spend most of your time in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay is nice too, well, Montevideo is an awesome city.

Also, make sure to spend a couple of weeks in Paraguay. Its the most obscure, unvisited and forgotten country in South America, but its actually a pretty nice place. You'll get hella bragging rights because nobody goes there.

South America is an awesome place, and If i ever decide to expatriot thats where I'd move.

What this man says. The best parts are definitely Argentina, Chile, and Brazil, but also visit some other counties because every one of them has something worth seeing.

I'm the guy from the bike trip thread. How Are the roads in Peru (under Lima) Argentina, and Chile?

Argentina: Excellent conditions, you'll only find gravel if you go really far from the beaten path.

Peru: Awful, the exact opposite. Be very careful of what roads you take.

Chile: Moderate, excellent roads near the capital but they get worse as you go far north or far south.

Each country is a world apart from the other.

Better then the rest of South America. Paved roads are really the norm there. Argentina in particular went on a infrastructure frenzy 20 years ago, and you have excellent paved roads and bridges going to places nobody even really lives anymore. They went through alot of expense to build tangled mazes of paved roads and bridges up in the mountains in the south and whatnot.

OP here.

Thanks for the responses. Argentina and Brazil were
big on my list, as well as Bolivia, Peru and Colombia. I've read almost nothing about Uruguay/Paraguay, would a couple of weeks suffice in each?

Rough plan - 2 months for Argentina, 3 months for Brazil, 1 each for Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia. That leaves me 2 months for Para/Uruguay, (maybe) Venezuela. Sound about right?

Peru Highway 1 South to Chile how's that?

i'd say be careful in colombia cause that one month could be extended indefinitely b/c of possible kidnap. and i ain't joking nigga. they have guerrillas in that country and they will hold your ass if they think you come from money. so it would be best to act low key there and stay away from the mountains and the forested areas (where the guerrillas come out to play). that said its caribbean coast and bogota are the places to see imho when it comes to colombia.

True. Doesn't mean the whole country is off limits to travellers, but certain parts are pretty much no go zones

Over hyped threat... the rebels are not really that intent on kidnapping random gringo motherfuckers. In the major cities, there is no issue, even in the rural areas, its a remote threat.

Its like saying to a European to not come to America because there is a 100% chance you will be raped and murdered by blacks nomatter where you go in the USA.

Just don't hike across the Darien Gap, unless you want to die.

They need to hurry up and build a fucking ferry so that you can drive the entire length of the Pan-Am Highway, without risking death in the Darien Gap (and limiting chances to death to everywhere else ^_^)

As a Chilean, if you visit my country, I'd recommend spending some time in Santiago, Valparaiso and the Patagonian South (or at least check it our from the Argentinian side, srsly its awesome)

Argentina has better infrastructure than us though, I'll admit
