Trans-Mongolian Anonymous
Going on the Trans-Mongolian in just over a week. Not going on a straight route though, stopping off for a day or two at locations along the way like Moscow, Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, Ulaanbaatar, Beijing. Never been to any of the countries before and besides some phrasebooks know none of the languages.

Tips? Suggestions? Warnings?

In mongolia Ghengis Khan is revered as a god, so mention that you think he was an awesome dude and you'll be fine. Also, fuck yeah Trans-mongolian railway.

did that last summer. irkutsk really didn't interest me so i'd recommend spending more time at the lake instead. not much to do there either but it was just nice to get away from the cities for a bit. If your train tickets aren't booked yet then i suggest stopping for longer in Mongolia, go to one of the travel companies in UB and go out into the country. Coolest country ever.

How much would the trans-mongolian or trans-siberian ticket cost? 2nd or 3rd class.
