Hello, /trv/

Planing to go to Japan, my problem is following.
As far as I have researched in Japan people mostly do their business with cash so I plan to bring ¥ 200 000 in cash and approximately the same amount on my VISA

Question is, should I bring all my money in cash (I don't want to do that) or I'll be able to pay with VISA in some places or at least withdraw money from it?

Also, should I transfer it from $ to ¥ on my card, sorry that might be a dumb question but I'm clueless here.

Yes. Yes, you are.

Doesn't your country have ATM cards? Buy a travel guide and read up on how and where you can withdraw money using your ATM card. Credit cards are for backup or ordering things on-line, not for daily use.

Yes and I have one. I'm specifically interested in how and where to withdraw money in Japan. How hard it is to find a place to do so and what is the currency exchange rate when doing so directly from the ATM
As far as I know you can only do it in post offices but I might be wrong.

Depends on your bank, but mostly in post-offices. Of course, post-offices are, quite conveniently, everywhere.

You pay roughly the current exchange rate, and a small cover charge, around ¥300. It is actually a pretty cheap way to transfer money if you withdraw amounts per ¥100000.

Of course, it sucks for you you're stuck with a bank account in Dollars. It's not worth that much relatively speaking..

What do you mean by that? I can convert my money to ¥ on my VISA if it is what you mean? Would it be the right thing to do?

Nothing you can do about it. Just keep an eye out on the exchange rate if you spend a long time in Japan.

Most ATMs in Japan doesn't take foreign cards.
The exception is the ones in the post office, and now also the ones at 7-eleven.
But don't worry, there's always a post office nearby.

As others have said, you can generally get money from the post office. If you have trouble finding one, or it's closed, try CitiBank too.

Carry plenty of cash. Don't count on being able to use your VISA anywhere, as most restaurants and stores are cash-only. Use your ATM/Interac card at the machines in the post office if you need more cash.

Japan is overrated. Korea is more interesting but both are not that good.

More for your dollar in SE asia - Malaysia, Singapore (lol *is* Malaysia but they're faggots), Phillipines (better than the rest IMO)

Fairly seriously, if you're going to do something different, Japan is (surprisingly) not the place to go.
