SK used to be a shithole, back in like the '60s and '70s it was really a piece of crap. Since then though, they had this national industrial revolution thing and their commerce went way up with multinational companies like samsung, lg, hyundai, kia, daewoo, and so on. So all those industries basically saved the nation, and they were a big exporter of goods for many years.

This year, the korean economy went to shit and their currency is worth much less than the dollar is today (mostly because their exports aren't being bought due to the world economy going to shit) . You get about 700 won to the dollar and you used to get almost a thousand.

So, it's the perfect place to go if you're an american and trying to get a lot for your dollar.

Their economy is bad this year but that doesn't make them by any means a third world country. That's ridiculous. They are an important player in the world market.

and don't go fuck around with 14 year old girls there, you'll get your ass kicked. People (especially family) watch out for each other in Korea. That's why orphans are hated, btw~

OP here. Air Force fag is why I'm here.

From my experience the type of girls that are attracted to white guys- meaning the kind that will approach you- yes are very interested in money, they want you to buy them things, they'll ask you about Gossip Girl and Sex in the City, but they're also easy. There are other girls too who won't use you, but its way harder to find them as they won't approach you like the others.

No there isn't any "foreign legion" like in France. They certainly don't need it when they have compulsory military/govt service.

Actually you get 1400 won to the dollar, but I think the point you were trying to make is the same. It doesn't mean much day to day, but if you're going to make any large purchases you can save an assload of money.

And yeah, they have a strong national pride, so if you're a forigner and fuck something up you could very well get mobbed. They love to protest too. Before we had protests about the US being the reason the south and the north are divided.. now we are having protests for taking them off the terror list. Anyone remember when they were going crazy over American beef(which 36,000 us service members eat on the peninsula everyday). There was actually a avian flu scare going around that people were dieing from, but you never heard any of that in the streets.

I don't know what the age of consent is here, but I'm fairly sure its 18. If you want sex tourism go to Thailand, don't bring that shit here.

I was in Seoul a few years ago and loved it. Really want to go back.

Two things:
-Where is the 'red light district' in Seoul? The tour book mentioned it but I didn't have time to go check it out. Worth it? Or too scary? I was told that you could get threesomes for cheap.
-What about other cities outside of Seoul, is it worth getting on the train to check out the rest of the country? Any experiences?
>> Anonymous
>>73158
The red light district is everywhere and anywhere it seems like. I was in Suwon, a city south of Seoul by 20 minutes or so, and I was passing a street I had always passed, except this time it was 1 AM. I must have seen 100 hookers lining the street, their little booths and curtains seeming to pop out of the walls. Reminded me very much of the photos I had always seen of Amsterdam..

my girlfriend and I strolled down the street just to take in the view, it was pretty crazy. They were all wearing nearly the same thing which made me think they probably all worked for the same or similar people.

Can anybody explain something about South Korea to me? Koreans are OBSESSED with their history, thats great and perfectly normal but they take it one step further, they're extremely proud of their achievements and their past but how are they so Christian? It only came around to Korea in the past 80 years or so and is completely alien to the thousands of years of Korean culture and history, now Christians go around destroying ancient Korean-Buddhist artifacts and politically are one of the most powerful blocs in the country. How can be so proud of Korean history and achievements and also be of a religion that is completely at odds with their past.

Korea is only about 50% Korean, but it has spread pretty quickly in a relatively small amount of time.

.08 seconds in google:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_in_Korea

Identification with Korean nationalism

One of the most important factors leading to widespread acceptance of Christianity in Korea was the identification that many Christians forged with the cause of Korean nationalism during the Japanese occupation of 1905 through 1945. During this period, seven million Koreans were exiled or deported[28] and a systematic campaign of cultural assimilation was attempted. In 1938, even use of the Korean language was prohibited.[29] However, the distinctly Korean nature of the church was reinforced during those years by the allegiance to the nation that was demonstrated by many Christians. Furthermore, while the subsequent constitution of South Korea guarantees freedom of religion as well as separation of church and state, the South Korean government has been favorable overall to Christianity, regarding the religion as an ideological bulwark against Communism.

cont.

On 1 March 1919, an assembly of thirty-three religious and professional leaders known as the "March 1 Movement" passed a Declaration of Independence. Although organized by leaders of the Chondogyo (???) religion, fifteen of the thirty-three signatories happened to be Protestants[30], and many of them were subsequently imprisoned. Also in 1919, the predominantly Catholic pro-independence movement called "Ulmindan" (???) (Righteous People's Army)[31] was founded, and a China-based government-in-exile was established by Syngman Rhee (???), a Methodist.[32]

Christianity was linked even more with the patriotic cause when Christians refused to participate in worship of the Japanese Emperor, which was required by law in the 1930s.[33][34] Although this refusal was motivated by theological rather than political convictions, the consequent imprisonment of many Christians strongly identified their faith, in the eyes of many Koreans, with the cause of Korean nationalism and resistance to the Japanese occupation. This show of resistance to the occupying nation enabled Koreans to see past the foreign origins of Christianity and accept it as their own.

Not up, but>>73100and on.

The girls are pretty average, as you would expect most places. There are quite a few hot ones you see, but no more than anywhere else in the world. The obesity rate is 2% though, there are very few fatties.

Street life? I can't attest much to the night scene if that's what you mean, but there is lots to do in Korea. There are lots of bangs (which means rooms). There are PC bangs where you pay a small fee (between 500-1000 won ($.50-$1.00)) per hour to surf the internet or play a ton of games, mostly Starcraft or Blizzard related of course. There are noraebangs (song room) which is karaoke. They're pretty cheap (10000won($10) an hour) and you can buy drinks and food there. There are DVD or video bangs where you pay about 7000 won ($7) to pick out a movie and watch it in a room with a projector for a screen and a comfortable couch/bed. Since they're cheap and lots of young adults still live with their parents, they'll often use these to fuck in. Most shopping areas are like the on in the picture, which has stores on top of each other. You'll get into an elevator and the 2nd floor will be labeled salon, the 3rd will be a clothing store, the 4th will be a noraebang and so on. Also, next to 1st level floor entrances there are often stairs that go up to the next floor business.

I meant "not op." Sorry for the typo.

Transportation is pretty crazy in Korea. A fair amount of people drive, depending on the area, but there are buses everywhere and the major cities (Seoul, Daegu, Busan, Taejon, and Kwangju) have subways. To ride the bus or subway is about 2500 won ($2.50) but you can stay on it as long as you want. What makes it even better is you can buy T-money cards and put a balance on them, then every time you get on the bus or subway you put your card up to a scanner and it deducts it from your card. When you transfer between the bus and the subway it will often not charge you as long as the time difference isn't too much. The card emits a signal to the reader so there is no swiping, you just put the card, or even your wallet/purse up to the scanner and that's it.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
The buses come by about every 5 minutes so if you miss one you don't have to wait long for another. Bus drivers are CRAZY and some of the rudest drivers in Korea. They will merge when they want to and honk at everyone in their way. This makes for a fun ride since half the occupants of the bus are standing up. The bus drivers swerve back and forth, slam on the brakes, and accelerate like crazy so you have to hold on for dear life at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly. If someone quite a bit older than you gets on (usually 40+), then it's polite to give up your seat if you have one. Also, to get off at your stop, you must get up and stand by the door before the bus even slows down. If the driver sees no one standing they'll just pass the stop.

Taxis are a good choice if you need to be somewhere specific and don't want to brave the traffic yourself, but they're nuts also. They're pretty cheap and you can probably get about 5 miles on 3000 won ($3).

I've wondered this too. I think in Korean culture somewhere there is this hive-mind connection. You see it in the retarded protests they have, the sense of nationalism, and certain christian groups that tend to be very vocal.

I would guess that it has to do with the unity over an ideology that they needed during the Korean War. Mobs of people (south korean)went around even after the war, killing other south Koreans that they thought might have had any affiliation with the communist party. Even so much as signing up for the communist party to receive rice years before the war. That mentality was probably handed down and you see it during protests and things. They have a very black and white sense of thigns, espeically the older population. You're either with them or against them and to a Christian saving someone elses soul (im sorry I struggled very hard not to write seoul) is of the utmost priority. At least, this connection seems logical to me.

I swear every time I'm in Meyongdong you see the yellow sashes and the singing and chanting.

during the japanese occupation of korea, the christian churches were actually one of the few if not only places for koreans to legally gather in large groups. the japanese allowed koreans to keep their religious establishments/communities but everything else regarding koreans assembling in mass was tightly watched over or not allowed. this got a lot of koreans to congregate at the christian churches and, as someone else said already, sort of tie in their remaining nationalistic pride with christianity.

the churches were used as like safe houses for korean pride, particularly as japan was trying to destroy it all and assimilate the peninsula. so its sorta easy to see how such foreign places/ideas could be accepted in such bizarre circumstances.

i think someone earlier was trying to say that 50% of koreans are christian. i had a textbook in college that said it was one out of four koreans are christian. either way, the percentage is significantly large.

Yeah, my numbers were off. From wiki:

As of 2005, approximately 46.5% of the South Korean population express no religious preference.[84]

Of the religious people, 29.3% are Christian (of which 18.3% (on total) profess to being Protestants and 10.9% to be Catholics), 22.8% are Buddhist, and the rest adheres to Islam and various new religious movements including Jeungism, Daesunism, Cheondoism and Wonbuddhism.

I'm not sure where I heard my numbers originally.

I think they're just so crazy that we notice them a lot more. Bottom right is a guy who was walking around with a speaker setup talking about the apocalypse coming or something. Then once on the subway there was a guy who walking from car to car preaching.
