Tried this before but the ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH shit was in full force so posting again.

Britfag here. Quit my job, got £600 to burn and sense of depression setting in. Wanna get the fuck out of London for a while, for as little as possible and for as long as possible. Thinking of hopping on a coach soon to Dover and catching the first boat over to the mainland. Problem, don't have much experience traveling (especially alone) and like a typical ignorant brit i don't speak a second language. Is this a good idea? What should i do? Where should i go? is sleeping under a mac against a tree in the middle of the countryside to save money practical or just romantic idealism? How long before i'm snivelling down the phone to one of my mates to send me money for a plane home? Will i get raped?

You won't know until you do it.

I'm sure all will be fine.

Get a bunch of friends and go down to the south west coast of England, St.Ives is good, rent a house and start drinking alcohol. You'll have an amazing time.

Although you need friends, which is doubtful seeing as this is 4chan.

No idea, might swing past Amsterdam and buy a ripped off bike for a few euro from some junkies. I really got no idea, (realistically) the money i've got won't last me long. i just gotta do somthing before i go INSANE. Might try to pull a few strings with the vague 'acquaintances' i've made over the years to get a sofa to crash on.

Look, dude, there is such a thing as "vagabonding". It's perfectly possible to travel the Earth, almost indefinitely, if you are prepared to take odd-jobs along the way and don't mind getting your hands dirty every now and then.

Consider, for example, dumpster diving. Not only is most food thrown out fully packaged and only a day out of date, but many people are happy to throw away perfectly adequate books, televisions, DVDs and other valuable possessions. As the old saying goes; one man's trash is another man's treasure. Pick up this stuff and sell it in a used-book stores or appliances store if you're running low on cash.
Understand, also, that hostels are typically populated by naive youngsters enjoying a gap-year. Take advantage of this! If you have any skills in gambling, visit a hostel's bar and challenge the youngins to a game of Texas hold 'em and enjoy as your superior strategy quickly starves the yuppies of their travelling funds. Or purchase cheap souvenirs from festivals you encounter during your travels, and sell them at a jacked-up price to some giddy little back-packer.

Now, those are just a few possibilities for DIShonest work. Consider all the legitimate occupation you could use to add on to that £600 you've got. Hostels readily take on workers, especially if they can speak English. Cleaning, reception, maintenance, bar-work, etc. etc.
There's also WWOOF too. In return for food and lodging many farms are registered to allow travelers to work for temporary periods on their farms.

For your low-budget scheme, hitch-hiking is a must and is also a useful means to gaining work by creating contacts and new friends. It's also a useful means to accommodation, as most people who are prepared to pick up a hitch-hiker are also prepared to put one up for the evening.

Don't buy the hype in movies like "Hostel" or what you hear on the news everyday; the world is actually a much safer place than you'd think. All you've got to do is be smart, be alert and know when somone's manipulating or taking advantage of you. Don't just be smart; be smartER. Most people who go on holiday are excitable and a little less than worldy-wise. If you're just that little bit more aware than those guys (and they do fine!) you should be 100% A-OK!

Best of luck, bro'!

Ooh! Also, have you any sailing experience?

You know, if you do, you can hitch a ride aboard a ship simply by hanging around at docks or checking online. Private ships making crossings often pick up hitchers. Could cost you around £15 a day for food, though, unless you can get them to employ you for the duration of the crossing. Then you can work for food and passage.

Thanks for the tips!

I'm from the US, and I've considered doing the same thing, buying the cheapest plane ticket to Europe, traveling for as long as I can, using money only in emergencies.

I don't know anyone personally who has done such a thing, and have only read stories online of people doing it.

It may not be the smartest thing to do, but right now it sounds more exciting than working until I die.

Honestly, the best perspective is "what have I got to loose?"

You're trading up a life of certainty, drudgery and stagnancy for a life of uncertainty and adventure. Good trade, if you ask me.

i would love to try that sort of thing. maybe even with another person, just to bounce ideas of.
altho why you would want a cock marathon i will never know. actually i think i do

I now also want to do this.

If you're out for experience... Why not?

Check easyjet and ryanair for cheap flights all over europe. Check somewhere like hostelworld for cheap, clean hostels. Europe is incredibly easy to travel and a lot of fun. There are a ton of young backpackers out and about this time of year, so you won't be alone. And I wouldn't worry about the language barriers. Most hostels have bilingual people working the front desks. Other than that, wander around, see the sites, and booze it up.

How hard would it be to find work under the table? Are there certain countries in Europe where it's more common?

I know this kind of thing tends to piss off locals but...adventure!

Work under the table ain't hard to find. Just know who to talk to. If there's a flag-waving "der dem dere immigants" guy about, don't go asking him for advice on where to find work.

But, it's been said before in this thread; hostels are generally happy to hire travelers so that'd be the best place to start. As a citizen of the EU I'm not too worried about work permits, but I imagine not many would care too greatly about and American scrounging some travel-change doing jobs nobody local wants to do anyway.

If you can't find work, try busking if you have any performance talents; juggling, magic, musical instrument etc. etc.
