I currently live in Indiana, and I plan on visiting Colorado and/or Idaho in the summer. Basically, I want to see what the weather is like. I've heard good things about both, at least when it comes to summer.

Any suggestions on how much money I should have saved up if I travel by car? How about places to stay and food to eat?

Colorado, in the mountains anyway, is generally pretty nice in the summer. Above 8000 feet highs are usually in the 70s to 80s and lows in the 40s to 60s. There is a small rainstorm/thunderstorm almost every afternoon that starts around 2-3PM and is done by 4 or 5PM. There are occasional major thunderstorms and freak blizzards that get more common the higher in elevation you go.

On the plains of Colorado it's hot, dry, and crappy all summer.

As far as places, I'd recommend most anywhere in the central and southern mountains of Colorado. The north is pretty, but all the population is centered there so it tends to be very crowded in the backcountry and you need permits for everything. The south and central mountains can be just as pretty but have a lot fewer people and regulations. As far as places, a tent.

I traveled by small economy car around southern Colorado, from Durango east, then north, then back around. I don't recall it being too expensive. However if you're patient you can hitch your way around. People will give you a lift--will often stop when they see you walking along the road--and you can travel that way if you're not too picky about where you ride. I've ridden in the back of a truck with loose lumber and 3 rottweilers but got there just the same.

I didn't really like Telluride. Too closed in. Most of western Colorado is pretty nice. Durango comes to mind. Breckenridge is nice too.
