I'm debating going on a trip to Egypt. Destinations include Cairo, Alexandria, and Petra. I've traveled all over Europe, Canada, and the US, but I haven't traveled to an Arabic country since I was a toddler. I'd just like to know what to expect in terms of culture shock, or things that I can do (legally) that are off the beaten path. I consider myself more of an adventurist than a tourist. Any advice or stories would be greatly appreciated.

1. Sneak in a pyramid
2. Deactivate traps / dodge lasers
3. Make love to a 3000 year old mummy.
4. ???
5. PROFIT

I just came back from a trip there, so here's some tips:

-People will gouge you for water, and you'll be drinking more of it than you ever have or will in your life.

-If you go to any bazaar, expect to be harassed. Its funny if not mildly annoying to have people all around you chanting, "Hello, my American friend!"

-Coffee shops have a fixed price inside, but outside its whatever they can get.

-Don't do the "Petra by night" tour. You don't see much, all you get is a long walk narrowly avoiding the day's feces and some bedoin folk singing(bad and goes on for way too long).

-See Petra by day though. It's a VERY long walk, most people don't realize that the place featured in the pic is just the beginning (which is far by foot as it is).

-Don't take the horses offered at the entrance. Do take the donkeys later on. You'll thank me.

-Everywhere you go, there will be loads of security. It gets very annoying. Know where all your metal objects are (try to do without them where possible) so you can easily take them off. (think airport security everywhere.)

-Hommos is synonymous with Hummus. Both equal delicious.

-Falafel is awesome too. As is schwarma.

-If you're going on a package deal, pretty much every meal will be CRAZY HUGE.

-Don't make eye contact with vendors or appear to be interested if you're not going to purchase. They take it as a sign of weakness.

-Haggling is big. You should almost NEVER pay the original price (provided you're not buying something at the supermarket or musem, etc.)

My only advice would be wear respectful clothing if you are entering or close outside of any mosques or holy areas. It will be hot and you'll want to wear less, probably, but some types of bare skin are seen as inappropriate, and they might bust a cap.

Also, are you a guy or girl? If you're a girl, and a white Westerner, you're in for a wholly different experience than a guy, e.g. harassment and oggling from men on the street.

-There are special baggies for your feet so your shoes don't touch the carpet in mosques. These are about 1 Egyptian pound each.

-At the Pyramids of Giza, visit the Solar Boat, a boat that was uncovered and restored near the pyramids.

-If you are ever about to be pulled in to a photo op, don't. They say its free, but it isn't.

-Try smoking a Hookah.

-Try Egyptian tea.
