Contemplating living in Portugal for a year or so. I'm an Amerifag. Supposing I put the time in to properly learn the language before I leave, are the chances still pretty high I'll get spat on in the streets and rendered unable to find a job? Also what's the most awesome part of the country in your opinion?

out of curiosity, why portugal?

Going to school to be a linguist, Portuguese is one of the few languages at my school that goes past the introductory level.

That, and I've seen a ton of awesome pictures from there on Photobucket, wiki, etc. I'll definitely travel there first before I make the move, but I'm just trying to get a feel for the place since it's one of the countries I know relatively little about.

I'm portuguese. No, won't be able to find a good job... Portugal sucks.

Most awesome part of the country? Girls. The rest sucks...

Will I not be able to find a job because there are no jobs, or because I'm a foreigner/American? What kinds of jobs do foreigners normally wind up with?

I promise I'll stop babysitting the thread now.

You have been out of the states before right, you make it sound as if all of the world actually hates americans, as long as your not fat and loud people are generally nice.

Try looking for a job at international places, such as the american school, the irish school or the british school.
There are also loads of bars and discos that offer jobs for english speakers, especially in the Algarve region.
My favorite region is Lisbon. It is quite cosmopolitan and theres much to do here.
As you are only planning to live here for a year or so, it wont be too difficult to find a job. Things get more complicated if ur trying to look for a job to sit your ass on for the next 30 years and retire (like most portuguese are).
i am pretty sure u will enjoy living here.

I lived in Lisbon for 5 years and it was great. Portugal is an extremely beautiful country and is cheap bby western Europe standards.

People don't hate Americans there, as long as you aren't a douche. Your only chance at working would be to teach English, but you can make a livable salary doing that.

You won't get a job at the British schools because they don't hire illegals. But there are schools that do. Get a phone book, make a list of schools, and drop off resumes. I was lucky and got a job my second day. I actually got two and had to choose.

You aren't going to learn the language unless you live there for a couple years, and even then your knowledge will be cursory. But that said, if you learn just basic Portuguese they will be delighted when you use it. Drop a "Bom dia" and they are all smiles, unlike the douche Spaniards who will completely ignore you unless you pronounce their words perfectly.

Please don't argue, I lived in both countries, the Spanish are incredibly inflexible when it comes to pronunciation. The Portuguese on the other hand find it entertaining to figure out what you are trying to say.

Fuck it, I'm going to argue anyway. It really depends what region of Spain you are talking about. Where were you staying?

Sounds like the complete opposite of what I experienced in other Mediterranean countries. The Greeks, Italians, and Turkish loved it when I used words in their languages, especially on the islands.

All major cities have anglophone companies with presences there, as well as local firms that need English-speakers even if your Portuguese isn't the best. News services (TV, newspaper, AP/Reuters), banks, engineering firms, hotels, etc.

If you have marketable skills and aren't trying to get a base-level job, you'll eventually wind up with something. Being a native English-speaker is nearly always a plus. If you absolutely need a job of any sort (deportation, money troubles, etc.), head down to touristy areas and sell shot glasses and windbreakers.

That's because no one else speaks their language, while a significant portion of the planet speak some form of Spanish. Italians/Greeks/Turks are therefore desperate for attention, while Spaniards turned to arrogant faggots.
