My 20th birthday is coming up and I've decided to do something crazy and live outside of my country for a few months. Kind of like a vacation, but I'd like to work if possible on my vacation.

I'm considering both Japan and Korea, but to make a sound decision, I need some opinions first.

How English friendly are either of these? I know little to no Korean, and not much Japanese. I've heard there's some (small) English communities in both, but nowhere near anything of interest.

How difficult would it be for a white Canadian man to land a job? Nothing career wise, but just something to make pocket change.

Aside from population differences, how different would these countries be from Canada? I live in Toronto, and it's one of the more sprawling cities in the world. Will I be overwhelmed by Tokyo?

Do I need any bullshit like a greencard (if I were moving to the US) if I wish to live in these countries?

It's only short term (5-6 months), and nothing permanent (unless it seriously changes my life enough to want to stay).

I don't think I am very well suited on becoming a teacher, nor do I think Japan needs any more English teachers.

I've heard Japanese are much more friendly towards Canadians than Koreans, is this true?

Hahaha. The Japanese hate Koreans and the Koreans hate the Japanese. They absolutely loathe each other. So you've got nothing to worry about friend.

Well, of course. Japan hates China much more, though.

I haven't. I technically have Canadian citizenship through my mom, but you have to live there in order to apply, so I can't take advantage of it...

Well, upon further reading into Working Holiday visas (the Wiki article helps), it's not only Canada that does it.

Don't do either.

Go Eastern Europe or South America. Totally different and not fucking cliche.

Southeast Asia tends to be fun too, especially Phillipines.

I've got something crazy for you in my pants!

I say go for Europe or somewhere else. Spain would be cool, it's one of my favorite locations I've ever visited and one of my friends just went there on an exchange program for three months and loved every second of it.

OP, do you want anybody to go with you? I just turned 20 and I've been thinking about doing something like this.

Bull. They're prejudiced towards the Chinese but not particularly hostile. On the other hand the Koreans have a tendency to be total dicks about everything which results in far more hate on both sides.

Go to Iceland. I just spent two months here and I am leaving in two hours. I got a job and life wasn't bad.

Europe generally (including most of Eastern Europe now) is at least as expensive as Japan and Korea. If you're on a tightish budget, I would suggest the Phillipines or Malaysia. Since they don't get many tourists (at least not Malaysia) it is pretty cheap, to say the least. Be prepared for an expensive and probably difficult stay in Japan or Korea.

Go live near an American military installation, almost guarantee population will at least understand you.
