Never used this board, but I’ll give it a go.

So I’m a studying physicist, and I love what I do. To me, science has done some great things to the world, it has also done some horrible things.

I need to know what the consciences may be. If it ever comes to it. Should I help create something that is dangerous? I have seen the latest research, hell, I’ve already helped it along, but the end result is always unclear.

I need to know what can happen, what I should try and stop, or just leave alone. Reading about it doesn’t suffice. So with that in mind, I have decided too go and look at the world around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Before you give me shit about dangers of radiation bla bla, chances are I know a lot more about radiation than you ever will, I know the dangers and I know how to stay safe.

So has anyone done this before? I’m not talking about some stupid tour to the outskirts of some random village. I mean grabbing a motorbike and riding into the thick of it, alone or with someone, it makes little difference, I grew up in the bush, I can handle the sense of been the last person on the planet.

Any helpful hints?

It sure is STALKER in here.

Hardly helpful and not what the place is like or about.

I'd love to do this too. Too bad I'm poor and a high school student. Have fun.

I am too interested. Mind posting an email or anything to keep track of you? I'd love to hear from you, if you actually will go. Bring a camera and maybe two. Go talk to the villagers too..

I have distant relatives in the Ukraine so maybe one day I'll go to chernobyl too. WTF else is there to do in Ukraine?
>> Anonymous
I dunno why some people are so obsessed with Ukraine.

I've actually been there a few times over the years(had relatives there) and much of the country is pretty desolate and not very interesting looking. I wouldn't exactly suggest a westerner going to the middle of nowhere (i.e.Chernobyl). Especially if you don't fucking know Russian/Ukrainian. Maybe if you're going to Kiev or some other big city...
>> Anonymous
>>35457
Is Russian similar to Ukrainian? Like, is "Vi mozete skazat gde tualet?" much different in Ukrainian?
>> Anonymous
>>35458
>Vi mozete skazat gde tolchock?
>> Anonymous
>>35458
Ukrainian is like a really fucked up version of Russian. So if you know Russian (or at least some or some phrases in said language), you'll get by.

I dunno Ukrainian myself, but my grandparents/aunt/cousins used to live there for like 10+ years and when we visited, we got to hear it on TV and radio and stuff, and as a fluent Russian speaker, you understand a lot of it, if you pay attention.
>> Anonymous
>>35462
Oh, and to add onto this, everyone (well, probably everyone) in Ukraine understands Russian perfectly. Although you're more likely to hear more Ukrainian and less Russian in eestern Ukraine than in eastern Ukraine though.
>> Anonymous
i heard that the area around the crimea is nice.
>> Anonymous
>>35463

Yeah, in the east, Ukrainians consider themselves Russian, while in the west there is a vile hatred for Russia itself. Ukrainefag here by the way.
>> Anonymous
>>35481

So I might even get beat up for speaking Russian there?
>> Anonymous
>>35481
Where do you hail from?
>> Anonymous
>>35483

People will look at you strangely. Kind of like speaking English in France.

>>35486

Lviv. I fucking wish we'd be part of the EU already and adopt the latin alphabet.
>> Anonymous
>>35487
Ah, so you're all the way in the west. I used to visit the Lugansk area, which is like on the opposite side of the country.
>> Anonymous
>>35491

I used to go near there with my family to visit my relatives, eastern Ukraine is like our Texas, except instead of Christianity they're all Marxists.
>> Anonymous
So what’s the language situation like there?
Do many people know English?

Can you get by on some basic phrases and such?
>> Anonymous
>>35442
>So has anyone done this before? I’m not talking about some stupid tour to the outskirts of some random village. Anything more than this won't happen unless you have a government clearance.
>> Anonymous
I doubt they have people on every road into the place, if I cant get "clearance" lol, then I’ll go anyway. From what I’ve read, that wont be a problem.
>> Anonymous
>>35642
there are "incognito tours" of the place, you just need to ask around
>> Anonymous
>>35510

A lot of young people in the cities know English, other than that, you're fucked having to speak Ukrainian/Russian.
>> Anonymous
>>35663
So what’s the attitude to tourists?

Will they tolerate you struggling with their language?
>> Anonymous
>>35675

If you try and speak the language they'll appreciate it a lot, just don't be a faggot American and be all "DO U GUYZ KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND SHERNOEBIL?" and you'll be fine.

Every scientific invention can be used as a weapon or a tool of creation. The splitting of the atom, the founding of penicillin, the advent of ballistics. These are all inventions that have brought pain and suffering to man kind, but they have also brought immense wealth and health to mankind as well. nuclear energy created the atomic bombs, but it also lead to nuclear medicine and nuclear powerplants, Penicillin might have saved soldiers lives and helped with the overall war effort of world war one, but it also helped to cure and save many lives that would've been lost otherwise. Ballistics have obviously been used to track the trajectory of projectiles as they moved through the air, but it has also been used to determine how airplanes and other vehicles travel though the air and how they respond to gravity.

So as a scientist, it is not your place to ask about how your findings will be used, but rather you should ask whether your findings could be used.

Leave the worrying about ethics and politics to the engineers, the politicians and the general public.

this is a lie as far as I know, the girl just took some pictures while on a tour guide led through there, also she doesnt know how to ride a bike

>>35787
how exactly is penicillin saving lives that would have been lost otherwise bad?

if you honestly believe that, then AIDS falls in the same mixed-bag category

besides, niggers in the poorest countries cant afford medicines
>> Anonymous
>>35787

OP
Seeing penicillin as a tool of death is taking it a bit far I belive. The whole point of it is to help people, what those people do is their own fault.

Helping develop a nuclear bomb on the other hand is different, it’s giving the government a nasty fire cracker that YOU made. If it wasn’t for you, it wouldent be around. Note, that’s just one possible example.

As for leaving the ethics in the governments and engineers hands, lol. Well, what I had seen in the world today has taught me that most governments and the general stupidity of the world are NOT to be trusted. It is important to know the consequences of your work.

Thanks, time to brush back up on my Russian and look at come Ukraine terms.

I'll Admit that i was very drunk at the time, and when i'm drunk i'm a fucking moron. Instead of making a clear and concise arguement, i usually end up get an idea and trying to manipulate everything so that it fits with the idea in my model.

>>35820
Reminds me?

What do you drink there? Is there beer, because last time I brought a 1L bottle of vodka, it was gone in that night. Not good.
>> Anonymous
How hard is Russian to learn phrases?
>> Anonymous
>>35442

Yeah well, with that attidute of yours, you remind me about one guy from GSC forums.

Well sure, there is place's where youre not allowed to go, and there is places where guards/soldiers have been ordered to shoot tresspassers, but as long as you have permission from officials, you can go and fuck yourself as many ways as you want as long as you dont do anything particularly stupid. And well, I dont think there is anything interesting after all, sure the countryside probably looks quite beatiful, but thats about it.

And well, I dont give a shit what inventions are being used in war since humans are basically just finding new reasongs to kill theyr neighbours through politics and religions..

Where are these grunts that shoot trespassers?

How strict is the army there? Would I be able to bribe my way out of things? And for how much?

Of course I will attempt to get permission first, but only for if that fails

And anyone know when they are starting to wok on the new sarcophagus? Because I think I would like to go before then.
>> Anonymous
>>36517

Well, nowadays, near the sarcofagus, since there isnt that much looting happening anymore, and Im pretty sure that theyre just going to yell you first instead of shooting unless youre carrying firearms or something like that that would make you look like an pontential threat or something like that

And theyre going to start building that new sargofagus in 2009.

Everyone can be bribed with enough money, but well, if you happen to be unlucky, you allways can take a tourist bus.

Red Forest might be quite interesting place to visit, or well, not so interesting now that its been turned pretty much upside down during the "cleansing"..
