Leaving the USA Anonymous
Hello /trv/

Due to a confluence economic and social of reasons I've decided to leave America for good. I have $36,000 USD and 12,000 renminbi saved up (converted it to keep its value), and I'm looking at some countries to go to and I have a few ideas:

Indonesia
Pros: Warm weather, cheap living costs, simple to learn language, good economic growth prospects
Cons: Earthquakes, floods, tropical disease, relative poverty, corrupt government.

India
Pros: Warm weather, cheap living costs, English widely spoken, weak central government, drugs widely available, great economic prospects
Cons: Poverty, drugs, communists

PR China
Pro: Excellent economy, varied climate, easy to get a job as an English speaker, secure
Con: Nosy government, relatively complicated language, pollution, higher living costs (comparatively)

Aside from the fact you seem to have a hardon for 3rd world asian shitholes wtf are you even considering going to indonesia? The place is a fucking powderkeg waiting to explode. Muslims killing hindus+ christians, an army with a history of brutality against civilians and being one of the most corrupt places on earth.

Not to mention an american living in the largest muslim nation on earth isn't a great idea when it's full of extremists...

Indofag here. We welcome Yanks despite what the media tells you (fanatical terrorists, etc.) as long as you are willing to blend in. I'm from Jakarta myself so I don't know much about the rest of the country. Jakarta is heaven for foreigners because we have EVERYTHING. Well, almost. The foreigners have their own slice of the city called Kemang which is a sort of bohemian, upbeat place where all the "cool kids" hang out. What do you do for a living? Lots of work opportunity in Jakarta for foreigners (to much of our own chagrin). I don't personally know Americans in Indonesia but from what I've seen online, a lot of expats seem happy there. Oh and last, Jakarta may be prone to floods, but we're safe from tsunami and earthquakes, so...

Here's a good place to start: http://www.expat.or.id/

I know quite a few Indonesians in the United States. All of the rich ones getting corrupt money from the government send their kids to California. The consensus was that Indonesia is a joke of country. Garuda Airlines has the highest accident rate of any national carrier, lol.

Hey, I've been to India and Indonesia, met expats in both countries. This was a couple of years ago though. Indonesia is beautiful as fuck and the language is quite easy to learn. The women are not as loose as in Thailand but you won't have to go into celibacy. Their system is (perhaps used to be) totally corrupt and bordering on fascism. An expat family I met had to hire relatives of bureaucrats for no-show jobs just in order to get residence permits. As for India, don't worry about communism. Even though some state governments are ( or used to be ) , communist, it doesn't mean that they will give your Ipod to the poor. Drugs... just say no, or yes... you can bribe yourself out of most trouble. As for sex with locals, forget about it. Not even a trafficked 14 yr old hooker from Bihar would lower her standards enough to be seen in public with a non hindu foreign dude.
>> Anonymous
Have u thought about malaysia? They kill people for posession of drugs, and probably for being communist as well. Hardly any real poverty or starvation. Not so many people. Excellent shopping, fantastic food, hot chinese women, proper roads, cool jungles. Not as fantastic as the neighbouring countries but more comfortable and less hassle. Still a repressive authoritarian government though but that's probably just as well since it prevents the local mooj's from killing amerifags like you.
>> Anonymous
China isn't as bad or nosy as they say. Pollution is a bit of a problem, but you're not gonna choke as soon as you breathe the air or anything, it's just a bit hazy (well I'm not too sure up north where pollution is worse, the south is generally less polluted).
You'll be living fairly comfortably with 36,000USD in China, things are pretty cheap there, particularly food (which is also very good). The economy is definitely very strong, catching up to the US, and living conditions are improving fast. Securing a good career is also easy as a lot of professions are in high demand in China. So if you want to plan for a secure and comfortable future China sounds good.
Language is definitely a problem, Chinese is one of the hardest languages there is to learn. You have to memorize hundreds (thousands if you want to be fluent) complex characters with all different meanings and it's just bollocks. At least the PRC uses simplified Chinese instead of traditional Chinese, so it's slightly easier than if you were to go to Taiwan or something.

Anyway, if you're a Westerner, I'd advise you to go to the bigger, southern cities. Cities in the south generally have better living conditions and are easier for Westerners to intergrate into. Try Shanghai, Shenzhen or Guangzhou (but they speak Cantonese so it sucks in that respect).

In regards to your other options, I'd suggest China over them. Much of Indonesia is quite unstable and often dangerous (I'm sure you've seen all the natural disasters and terrorist activities that take place there), and India is more crowded, generally dirtier, not as modern and doesn't have as good living conditions as China, and also has a weaker economy than China.
>> Anonymous
>>26011
Oh, forgot to mention, China is actually very safe with very low crime rates in comparison to the US (this can be attributed to China's harsh justice system), so there's very little chance you're going to be mugged on the streets like in Western countries. Most Chinese seem to be disciplined and sensible people.

Russia would be my obvious first choice out of all the countries that won't be as harshly effected by the American financial crisis. It's as close to the first world as you can get without actually being in the first world (I think Moscow has more billionaires than any other city on Earth, it can't be all that bad), and they have the same economic boom going on as in India and China. There's also a high demand for workers AFAIK, considering their population losses as of late and low emigration rates. Just don't get involved in politics and enjoy ur hot ruskie chicks.

op here:

My education is a bachelor's of science in biochemistry, 6 months so far at a pharmaceuticals company, but it is a shitty job and I think my job is probably going to be downsized soon anyways. Most of my money is from saving/investing.

Will it be easy to find a job in my field overseas, just because I'm a foreigner or will I have to compete with much more qualified domestic workers?

I'm really considering Indonesia at the moment, or Malaysia. Either way I've been learning the language because it's spoken across the two countries. Also I took a lot of Chinese in college, so that should help down the road.

I thought about Singapore, but it's getting a bit out of my price range and I think it would be harder for me as a foreigner to get a job there.

Right now I'm thinking of maybe going to Indonesia, getting a job in Jakarta or some smaller regional city and then buying up some cheap land in one of the smaller islands once I have enough money for retirement's sake. Then, from there, maybe try and land a job in China. I'm definitely optimistic about China and I think it could become the main center of trade and commerce in Asia.

Oh and to respond to one poster:

"as i said, it wont be as strong as europe, but it wont DIE. unfortunately the world needs the usa"

heh, I don't think the world needs us at all >_>

indiafag here well out of those 3 india is the best, not sure where you got the communist part from its only in bengal & its spread throughout in small villages but it isnt a problem. Drugs yea I guess you could get em although i never tried it when i went(live in ny).

Girls i guess that will be a problem but depending on how you look i bet they might give you a shot. a lot of the sluttier girls go to the clubs so be on the lookout and you can meet a lot of them at jobs you can get maybe as a teacher for "voice negating"

Living costs is ok but it kinda depends on what you want. Decent apartment costs around Rs.5000 ($100-150) per month.

You should go mainly in the south since the north is a shit hole. Id say stay mainly in bangalore( hear it has the best weather year round) & goa - best beaches & lots of tourists & girls going there on vacation.

I'd suggest you go to southern Brazil.
I've been studying this country for some months and I'm almost moving there.

Let me show you the pros and cons:

Pros: Brazil is one of the BRICs. The economy grows fast and there are lots of possibilities if you want to work and are graduated.

Varied climate. In southern Brazil, actually, the weather seems like southern Europe. It's cold in winter (but it doesn't snow) and warm in summer. But if you go to the litoral you'll see it's REALLY hot.

No hurricanes, earthquakes, big floods... fortunately there's nothing like that in Brazil.

Rich culture. Ok, that may not be a real pro, but still, you'll never get bored listening brazilian music. It's exciting.

"Leader" of Latin America. Biggest country, largest army. If there's anyone in South America who will win an war, this one is Brazil.

Cons:
Corrupt government. Brazilian politicians are a joke.

Hard language to learn. Lots of accents and rules. But even the brazilian people screw up about some accents. And, of course, the nasal sound. Learn portuguese and you'll know what I mean =[.

Lots of taxes. You have to pay for almost everything.

High violence rates. Maybe in southern Brazil violence is not so high, but still higher than european/american rates.

Hope I helped you.

Not sure it qualifies for a Golden Age, especially for a huge country.

>The economy grows fast
4% is not "fast growth"

Maybe not like China or India, but brazilian economy is now solid and recently they have received the investment grade for the first time. So when I say the economy grows fast, I mean it IS growing fast, and, if the government helps, WILL grow fast.
"France has (by far) the strongest army among the South American countries. They can nuke every major Brazilian city in a few minutes, and in the jungle, the Foreign Legion garrison can probably hold out for any amount of time"

I'm considering just the south-american countries, really. France has French Guyanna, but I'm not sure someone will attack that piece of land, neither will them defend with all their heart.

About jungle, I think you know Brazil has the best jungle troops in south america (and possibly in the whole world). Considering the fact that real war that may happen WILL be on the Amazon (talking about Chávez, Morales, Correa... just like almost happened some months ago), and that Brazil (acoording to globalfirepower.com) is miles away from other countries, yeah, I'm pretty sure that if there's a war in South America including Brazil, I think this country wins.

However, of course, their army is not the best there is.
But to deal with the south-american buddies, I think it's enough.

Amerifag here.

Wait until the elections are over.

If its McCain or Clinton = LEAVE NOW POST HASTE

If its Obama = Wait until the Dollar resurges.

I know a lot of people hate the US for its militaristic overtones and imperalistic attitude, but honestly the average american (and not the kind you're force-fed from TV shows) is not all that bad.

Still, I'll tell you right now: The only people who like Bush (Aka Worst US President since Warren G. Harding) are the xenophobic racist white conservative republicans, we're just biding our time until 2009.

Because I (optimistically) think that things will improve with someone new in the White House.

In terms of how Bush-like the canidates are:

1. Clinton
2. McCain
10. Obama.

Seriously, Obama GETS the rest of the world, he's like a european in the aspect of understanding cause and effect of the actions of the government.

And despite my own approval, he's far from perfect. He's human just as anyone else is, but compared to the Lies, Deceit and Flip-flopping of the other two, he's golden by comparison.

So to reiterate: Wait until the general election is over.

We never had the industrial revolution on the scale of many other countries because we did not ever have the shit bombed out of our country, therefore we have a lot of old infrastructure and industry from 100 years ago.

I'd love to have the kind of manufacturing sector Japan fostered, but I also understand the reason they had newer superior factories is because their old ones were all blown to hell.

Well, France is a country, and is (partly) in South America, so it IS a south-american country.

Well let's see : Guyana has been a part of France since the 17th century, the European space center is there (in which the EU has invested billions of euros - because Guyana is on the equator so it's a huge advantage to launch rockets from there), there are gold mines there, and thousands of French citizens.

Plus, France has stood up against the US for Iraq, and today against China for Tibet, so I don't see why they'd let a harmless country like Brazil get away with attacking France itself.

DO NOT got to china
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_china
trust me on this shit. being an american, you take your liberty for granted. don't.

why do u want to move to (relative) shitholes anyway? economic prospects? that's a pretty fucking stupid motive considering how unpredictable economic and political growth and stability can be, especially when humanity is facing threats like peak oil on the horizon.

don't think you can move to south east asia and, because of your greenback, live like a fucking god on earth surrounded by luxury and riches in earthly paradise. it doesn't work like that. you will live in probably a worse home, with worse prospects and far worse benefits, things like tolerance, defence and stability. your money will go quicker than you think.

imo if you really want to do this then go to a relatively wealthy state already. you don't have the live in the capital, there's more to japan than tokyo, more to korea than seoul etc.. make rights and stability a top priority. consider singapore.

and get over your trip to jakarta.

That's all the way in Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea where Melanesians live. There's different parts of the peninsula, dipshit.

Bush is a retard. Liberals are retards with AIDS. At least Bush doesn't hurt America intentionally like liberals do.

Reality.

Dear OP, enjoy living in a nation with less freedom, civil liberties and opportunities while finding out the real world outside the US is more racist, intolerant, hateful, corrupt and prone to spoon feeding it's citizens convenient bullshit propaganda than the one place on Earth that would put up with your crap.

Good luck on living in a nation with Muslims and getting burned alive or beheaded while the local cops and natives just smile and point at you, the new scapegoat.

I'm not a liberal, ever was and still am a republican, and as a matter of fact have served 4 years in Iraq. And I'm NOT going back there. Now if you want to lecture me, go there yourself, at least FIVE years, then we'll talk about it.
At least if America had grown rich with the plundered oil of Iraq, I might understand. But, no, we've wasted money on this war, perhaps even burned more oil than we got out of there (tanks and planes guzzle oil like crazy), and I have risked my life only to be insulted even here, by fellow Americans and fellow republicans.
So, sorry, but I wish we had listened to France, and if more countries had had the balls to make a stand, maybe we would have avoided this mess.

You're not a republican, and as a matter of fact have never served 4 years in anything.

Go back to Daily Kos you liberal moonbat.

>You're not a republican, and as a matter of fact have never served 4 years in anything.
Wrong on both counts. And jusk ask me IRL, or ask probably every other guy who went there: you'll most likely get the same answer.
The best way however, as I suggested, is to go there (Iraq) and see for yourself. The Pentagon is having a hard time recruiting people these days, too, so you'll serve the country and republican cause, if you believe that's the way to do it.

>Go back to Daily Kos you liberal moonbat.
I don't even know what "Daily Kos" is, and I'm staying here, and you've only got one way of shutting my mouth, it's to go and make "the surge" "work". I sure tried, and failed, so I'm convinced this war is bullshit. Now, go and prove me wrong. I'll apologize, and anyway I'll win too since once it's over I'll be treated like a war hero instead of "a failure" like the Vietnam "losers" were.

The only way to save face now is to stabilize Iraq. We'll still lose, but if we pull out now we'll lose even more. Knowing what I know now I'm really baffled as to why our government went in there.

Once a long time a go I went to Kos Daily. Imagine a small army of paranoid communists with the mentality of a 10 year old crack addict. That is what I saw.

Burn them with fire.

So… you stocked up on a currency where the government controls the exchange rate? It’s obvious you’re planning on going to China and just want to start a shitstorm.

If you bought rubles, you’d be going to Russia. Rupees, India. All with government-set exchange rates, and all very difficult (if not impossible) to exchange on the open market.
