Melbourne is a mid-sized city, pretty big immigrant populations but not really that much compared to cities like Sydney. The thing about Melbourne is that there's something going on in every season - in summer there's beaches (note that our seasons are reversed), in Autumn there's nice hiking to be had and nice scenery, in winter there's tons of festivals and stuff, and skiing if you go out of the city a bit, and in spring there's a fuckload of festivals and activity and shit as the city comes out of hibernation. Also a lot of parks, botanic gardens and stuff like that.
If you're a young /trv/estite, there's a pretty big bar and club scene. Ever since the state government liberalised liquor laws about a decade or so ago there's been this explosion of bars, clubs, and bottle shops. You can pretty much find a bar with any atmosphere you can care to name, and you can find them in the most unexpected places - in shipping containers and abandoned warehouses, places like that. We have a casino aswell. It's not that old but there's a bunch of old buildings and historical Aboriginal sites if you're into that.
I can't really make a case for visiting Melbourne over other cities since I haven't been to many but I can say that Sydney is too big and confusing, and only good in summer. Brisbane is nice though, so is Perth and Adelaide.
I hope you come and pump some money into the economy.
