Stay home. We don't want you.

Don't forget to talk loudly in english on crowded streets. Europeans will instantly like you, because you stand out, and they enjoy loud drunken foriegners.

Having done this, here are a few tips:
1) Don't act like an American.
2) If people ask you where you're from, either lie (and lie well) or apologize for our moron president and explain that everyone here hates him and that we're nothing like our television. Europeans often view Americans the way we present ourselves in the media, which is anything but favorably- think Paris Hilton, Super Sweet Sixteen, BET, and McDonald's.
3) Stay in hostels, not hotels. Hostels (for the most part) are actually clean and safe; the likelihood of being murdered is slim to none. They're much, much cheaper than hotels, especially if you stay in the many-person rooms.
4) Get a multi-day rail pass. Trains are your friend.
5) Don't get very drunk. First of all it's stupid to waste your international trip being shitfaced and hungover, and second people are more than happy to take advantage of drunken idiot American.

Or say you're an American and then just act like normal. Hiding behind "I'm Canadian" is more bullshit than anything else.

I fail to see why I should suffer because through no fault of my own my country looks like a worthless bunch of consumerist pigs in the eyes of the rest of the world. If I can circumvent the reactions that come with that, I will.

if you really want to blend it, buy clothes there. there are subtle differences between the way Europeans and Americans dress.

Also, I am a metalfag and so going to europe is an oppurtunity to enhance my wardrobe. I got a few shirts over there that you can't get over here, such as the Burzum Aske cover on a t, it was wierd cause at an enslaved concert in Seattle i got complimented on it out of the blue a bunch by people who couldn't get one imported into the states.

Nobody in europe dresses like that though. If you want to blend in, just buy an ugly grey jacket from around there and some jeans and a T-shirt. Everyone from eastern europe dresses like that and you blend in.

Black shoes, also, no ugly assed sneakers.

Ausfag here.

Backpacked in Europe last year, and met a number of Americans, all of whom were stand up people.

I think you'll find that anybody who is openminded enough to travel half way around the world with nothing but a backpack is going to accept you for who you are, regardless of colour or creed.

Unless of course you act like a douchebag.

Just so I don't have to make a new thread about backpacking across Europe, is it safe to just pitch a tent and camp out in the woods? Or is law enforcement or bears gonna wake me up in the middle of the night and make my experience horrible?

That pretty much applies anywhere in europe, anywhere any place really. Look neutral, and look like you know where your going and you belong there and people don't suspect anything.

How much money would you need to do a typical backpacking trip?

That of course depends on how long you want to stay- I spent 3 weeks in Germany and spent $1500, including airfare. But I also stayed in cheap hostels and with friends when I could.

Good News: If you do it right, like 80% of your expenses will be your airline tickets to and from the US.

Bad News: That's about two thousand dollars.

Europe is not a country!
Diffrent place, diffrent rules.

In Sweden you can camp anywhere you want for no more than three nights, no private land, but a good majority of Sweden is countryside, the rest of Europe has different rules. Google is your friend.

also no government, enjoy merging with us dutch to form OUR new Greater Netherlands.

wait...what? i believe you are mistaken fine sir. Belgium is lacking a government, that is your Greater Netherlands. The US has a government, and would most likely be completely ungovernable under any other. We aren't all "polite" and "patient" like Belgium.
