movin to korea Moo?
OK travelsluts,

Here is the deal I may have to move to Seoul next year, my Gf is being transfered there. I have visited once and it was fine. My question is am I fucked for finding a job without speaking korean? I do NOT want to be an engrish teacher and have 2 masters degrees in engineering fields. I have looked around and have found very little unless I want to work for defense contractors or teach engrish. Is /trv/ going to help me or do I have to contact the gentlemen?

South Korea? Brings electronics and automotive to mind, dunnit?

Sounds like it is time to break up. The man's career is more important than hers and you moving to Korea doesn't seem to be helping your career.

wonderful at least 1 question has been answered, this was the wrong place.

You will find it very, very difficult to get a job unless you can speak Korean. Aside from Engrish teaching, naturally. But I'm sure that with 2 engineering degrees you would have some excellent skills that people here would love to bring in to work for them.

Seeing as I don't know shit about defense engineering, i would have to say that your only viable option at the moment would be to teach english while you learn korean, then get a proper job.

Or at least, start getting into contact with some big firms here. Maybe they'll find the fact that you have 2 degrees enough to outweigh the language barrier.

Good luck, anon.

Yes I have talked to some architecture and construction firms there a while back. none seem to keen on hiring westerners anymore, 1 said they used to hire many germans but they kept quitting after 6 months....not good. The university Seoul national seemed a good bet but they also only need english teachers nothing else.
again, I want NOTHING to do with the defense industry.

What type of defense contracting are we talking here? Designing uniforms? Test-driving tanks? Kicking down doors in order to bring people to torutre camps?
Most MIC jobs are pretty well paying, especially in countries that are (technically) at war and even if you're a peacenick a lot of defence jobs involve little more than sitting in an office and working on a computer.

Otherwise I suggest that you start learning Korean very very fast. Supposedly it's not that hard.

no, they have korean engineers for that stuff. more likely it will be foreign contractors and suppliers such as SAAB microwave radar, Bofors heavy weapons systems, GE, Rathyon. they only need westerners for proprietary tech. and Swedish heavy artillery.
But this is irrelevant I am in infrastructure/architecture/construction industry...Damn china would have been allot easier. I wonder if r9k will know anything if i cut paste over there?

Op here, I am trying to move this to r9k, but delete is failing me. admin?
