So I have family on the other side of the country and I can't fly there due to fiance's high anxiety. We are considering riding the rails (Seattle->Chicago->New York or D.C->Jacksonville), but we aren't sure just how much it will cost. Anyone traveled cross country by train like this and have some helpful pointers?

Let's just say that a blindfold and a bottle of white wine before going to the airport will save you a pretty penny comparet to the railway-option.

Seriously, teach her to face her fears, this is the 21st century and she'll have to fly at some point.

She's flown before, but her neural pathways are hardwired for anxiety and she can have panic attacks which in turn might cause seizures. Rather not push that domino if I can help it.

I shit it when confined but was perfectly fine on the aeroplane, alone.

Buy her something to fiddle with xD and let her sit in the isle side.

Best tip I can give you is to ask /n/. They've forgotten more about trains and rail travel than /trv/ will ever learn.

cough up the cash for business class, if that fits the budget. the flight will be much more relaxing.

like for every true gentlemen, a roofie is the answer

/n/ should be quite knowledgeable regarding this matter.

What.

Tell her to get over it and save a shit ton of money that way.

It's fucking expensive to take Amtrak trans-continental. A psychiatric visit and a prescription for hard mind-altering drugs will be cheaper.

It is fun though. You can meet some very interesting people on the train. Just keep an open mind and be prepared for the odd creep.

cant she take some sort of tranquilizer?

Seriously, roofie FTW. Rail travel is very expensive.
enjoy your high-maintenance girlfriend/wife.

I take the train whenever I can (provided I get a roomette) - It's a pretty cool experience if you bring some entertainment/snacks with you. You'll meet some really interesting people (along with some really seedy people)Why not give it a try?

it's not the expensive if you just ride coach for a few days.

AVOID COACH AT ALL COSTS.
It's packed with loud mexicans/foodsmells and perverts
the lights never turn off, and just forget about sleeping.

trains fucking rule. just sit back and enjoy the scenery, take it easy, eat, drink, sleep, fuck (if you get a sleeper which you should unless you're too poor). totally just chill with it. but stay out of the smoking car, and the movies they show there suck anyway. but seriously a great way to see america

dont listen to them. coach is NOT that bad. its is extremely roomy compared to a plane. amtrak has very nice service with an observation and dining car. ive never gotten a roomete. but when i get bored of sitting in my seat i go hang out in the observation car which has a snack bar on the lower level. ive done this three times. from chicago to new mexico, new mexico to chicago, and from chicago to denver. i personally think that the view is alot more enjoyable than a plane. yes it may take like 20 hours on the train, but if you make it part of the vacation too, and not just the transportation to your vacation spot, it can be very very fun. its about the same cost as flying southwest airlines. and omg, i personally cant stand being smashed into an airplane seat. the train isnt that bad at all. if you've never done it before then trying it for the first time should be fun no matter what just because its something new and cool. just make sure you make your dinner and breakfast reservations for the dining car early, because they fill up quick. here is a picture of my little brother on the train, to show you how big the seats are compared to an airline. the leg rests are up and those seats go back a bit farther. they also make stops every few hours to let passengers on and off. its great to get off for the 10 minute stops and have a smoke as well.

also no foodsmells (smells clean), and no perverts (except for me -- but i didnt do anything, what am i going to do in public surrounded by other people)

the first time i went, the guy i went with met two girls in the observation car and started chatting it up and once it got dark at night and the lights went off he ended up fingering one and getting head from in the other in the observation car.

AmTrak was great. Only problem is your stop might be at 3:40am. Also the stations are all 100 years old and usually in run down sections of towns. The Albuquerque station has good security though. Took Gayhound once, filled with the fail of society and the seats are tiny and hurt your ass.

I can't stand that, the train goes through old abandoned towns, and it has to go slow as hell cause it's crossed with the street of the towns nobody lives at.

yea, the omaha, nebraska station is pretty scary and run down.
