Going to Borneo for field studies but I get a few days to stay in the main city, Kota Kinabalu

Any good cheap hostels to stay at or restaurants to try? Anything good in particular to see? Or things to avoid?

picture kind of unrelated

Southwest flies to Borneo now?

Borneo?! Are you an anthropologist?
Bruce Willis wouldn't go into some of those jungles to rescue Miley Cyrus. Shrunken heads are the hot souvenirs.

1.79 for gas

Acutally, malaysia airlines. I said it was unrelated. And I'm an evolutionary biologist but just kind of starting out.

Is it really that scary? =[ I heard they found a venomous snake there recently that changes color like a chameleon does...

I remember when gas was that cheap.. Ahh the good ol' days.

I remember when gas was under a dollar. Seems impossible...

Good lord I'm sick of hearing people bitch about gas prices. Fucking enough, deal with it, it's the same shit every day, stop acting surprised. Every time somebody complains about gas I feel like SLOWPOKE.JPGing them.

how often are you forced to drive?

Stoping whining about gas prices! here in Norway (a oil producing nation) its 2.66 USD / 1.74 Euro per litre (thats about 1/4 of a us gallon). We only dream of the prices you lot are paying now.

There's a lot of bars and cafe's along the beach towards the main town. as hostels, I've been to Akinabalu youth hostel. that place is decent, but I heard good things about Tune Hotel 1Borneo. Never been there though.
Normally I'll be at Hyatt Regency.
On Sunday mornings, go to the local flea market. Ask around for the nearest "Pasar Tamu" and you should have the directions.
If you need to buy souvenirs, the Filipino Market would be the place to go.

It was always more expensive in Europe. It's at €1,52/l here in Germany :/

Your economy wouldn't be brought to its knees by 8 dollar gas.

Ours, on the contrary, would.

sigh...bad picture choice...my fault

anyway any special mosquito-repelling methods? I'll be bringing a mosquito net and 100DEET bug repellent and some "bugs-away" stickers from Taiwan. Seems like enough...but I didn't have enough time to get the vaccine for Japanese encephalitis or yellow fever. Covered for malaria and Hepatitises though.

Also, can't find leech-proof leggings >.<

the locals here normally use citronella (here they call it "serai wangi") oil as repellent. I remember using one that comes in something that looks like a deodorant stick. works fine.
For leeches, we wear long pants tucked into our socks and sprayed with aerosol bug spray for good measure. yeah fashion faux pas i know, but what the fuck do i care i don't want to die of overleeching.
Also the more common local leeches are the thin long ones they call "pacat" instead of those big fat black things. I'm not sure what they call them in English but one thing's for sure, once you remove them the wound will hurt like a fucker afterwards. better to let them fatten up and roll away by themselves.
try to get your yellow fever shot at a local clinic/hospital. JE isn't that common except for that one time we had an pretty much localized outbreak.
Drink gin and tonic.

Which part of Borneo will you go to do your field studies? I see a lot of students going to the Mount Kinabalu National Park.

Thanks so much! Good to know that about the leeches. We're going pretty much all over the island, and doing marine samples too.

cool ok did some research on citronella...will get some for sure. but they attract bears??? of all things lol

If this is true, randomest tradeoff ever. Mosquitoes vs. bears.
