My Mandarin is pretty limited. I can barter and romance girls (not that it's really necessary), but that's it. It took a few months to get to this level, but I know people who have become fluent in less than a year just by talking to everyone they can. You don't need to speak much Chinese to live in China, though of course it's a good idea to learn. Investing in a good pocket translator once you get here might help you out occasionally.

For example, you now require a return ticket and proof of hotel reservations for many visas, they are mostly limited to 30 days for all nationalities, and you're unlikely to be issued multiple entries. As whether or not they issue what you want comes down ultimately to the discretion of the consul you speak to, they are more and more often flexing the ability to tell you to fuck off if they don't like the way you're dressed or your ethnicity, particularly at visa-issuing ports of entry.
