dear probably turkish guy:

what's your take on a vacation to istanbul? i have a friend flying into istanbul with a basic Turkish language dictionary and winging it alone for 2-3 weeks in a couple months. sorta makes me want to at some point as well. Opinions? Good place to go?
>> Anonymous
I'm not sure whether a dictionary would do much good. It's definitely a good place to go but beware
of the pickpocketing(it's the plague of istanbul).
Nightlife is lively. If you are going to buy souvenirs, try to haggle a bit(they usually charge tourists triple).
If you aren't into historical stuff, you may not want to visit here.

I'm living on the asian side of the city,so visit kad?köy and see haydarpa?a station, you may want to visit üsküdar for K?z Kulesi(Girl's Tower) and beylerbeyi palace. You may want to visit kandilli for fresh air,if you're interested in nature.

when will he be going...
march will be worst time to go (weather)
in istanbul he don't need to know any Turkish at all. Especially around taksim (which i suggest him to say.) Most travel agencies recommend sultanahmet or around because close to historical places but that place sux, there is nothing.
Taksim is the source of nightlife and he can go any where he likes from taksim.

Out of istanbul, middle anatolia will be a good place if he likes to see stones or wide open places.
north is green and gray, he cant swim but lots of hiking and good fish. and funny people
south is pretty much same as spain or greece.

don't even think going to east... there maybe dragons.

do not barter, just pay half price without saying anything. you life will be simpler.

I lived there for 10 years. It's a cool city if you actually try to like it. I wouldn't go back just because I would like for it to stay a nice past memory, but I definitely loved it there.

Especially downtown Omaha. In the winter, they light up all the trees... UNO has the firework show every year... Old Market is probably the coolest place to buy food... The Orpheum Theater is completely elegant... Centennial High School is almost unreal, even. Fuck, one high school there looked like a mall on the inside. It was insane.

Omaha is only boring if you sit on your ass on /b/ all day and look at the grey sky through your window every once in a while.

Steele Indian School Park and ASU are the only physically appealing parts of Phoenix. I love downtown Phoenix, but it's really not the most gorgeous place in the world, and everywhere around it is just desert.

Peoria and Tempe are pretty, though. The latter is better, but Peoria is where everyone goes to shop lol.

ASU is in Tempe, by the way. Not Phoenix. I should have said that ASU is in the Valley, though most people just call El Mirage, Surprise, Peoria, Tempe, or any other part of the Valley "Phoenix".

Try going from living there to living in a desert in the middle of Arizona, and then tell me Omaha is really that bad lol. I wouldn't ever move back there because there's a million other places I'd rather go to, and the people are generally all depressed losers in Omaha, or football-loving depressed losers, but I still think it is a nice city, if you get away from the run-down neighborhoods. Omaha reminds me of the little cities surrounding Boston, honestly, such as Salem (excluding the tourist sites and ghey occult shit).
