here's some protips: most of the tables in the big tents are reserved for companies. there's no chance getting a seat in the late afternoon or evening especially if you are a bigger group i.e. more than 2. so get there early to get a seat and stay there until the end.
in the tents it's only funny when you're drunk, but then it's really funny! but many make the mistake of drinking too fast. the trick is to be drunk just nicely for hours. oktoberfest beer is stronger then normal beer, the band and the people around you call you to drink all the time, waitresses are fast and the jugs big so you have always some beer in front of you. it's all laid out to get you totally shitfaced in no time. so take it slow if you don't want to puke your guts out or pass out at the table after 2 or 3 hours. really, this is a totally diffrent game then sitting in a bar or going to a party.
if you are not the kind of person who likes to dance on the benches while singing stupid songs or getting kicked in the back by other guys dancing on the benches while you like to drink your beer quietly i would recommend a seat just outside a tent in the beer garden. this is actually quite nice. fresh air, no noise. talking instead of shouting. but you still better come early to get a place.
if you're not going there to get drunk, get there early. untill mid-afternoon it's more of a family thing and real fun especially for kids with all the rides and stuff. of course there're also lots of fun rides for adults, too.
