/trv/, I've wanted to take an extended road trip all around the country for some time now, just me and the car. What kindof expenses would I be looking at for a ~one month trip?

I'm thinking about bringing a minivan with the back seats taken out and a mattress put in to sleep in the car. Is this a bad idea for whatever reason? What type of places would I be able to park and sleep for the night?

Depends on how much luxury you want. You could pretty much survive on a diet of beans, rice and bread for a good while. Not healthy, but you'd live, and it is cheap. You'd want to bring dried food and things that can be eaten raw (nuts, grains, dried fruit, etc). Then again, I'm a minimalist so I would actually enjoy spending time living like that. The only significant expense I could think of would be the gas. I wouldn't bring a mattress. Just a sleeping bag and a tent just in case. If you haven't already, do a bit of camping/backpacking before you start just so you get an idea of what you do and do not want/need.

For parking, rest stops when you can find them. Hotel parking lots that don't require permits/dashboard markers. Parking inside cities is tougher. Park outside and use public transit to get into cities. If you can, bring a bike so you can park a distance, get around quickly, and return. Also, some hotels/motels offer free continental breakfasts and don't check who is coming and going. Get a cup from each fast food restaurant and save it in your car. Walk in, "refill", leave. Don't buy bottles of water, get gallon jugs. Good luck. Sounds fun. I highly encourage this adventure. People might think it is stupid, but really, what else are you going to do with your youth? Work at Starbucks?

Oh my parents did that once. I think it'd be more fun if you didn't go alone.

OP here.
I've done much shorter road trips with friends, and it was alot of fun, but you start to really get on each others nerves. I've done 3 in the past two years of between 3 and 5 days, and the last 200 miles of the trip are murder because you want to strangle everyone else in the car. I'd hate to get fed up with my travel companion a week into the trip in the middle of Nebraska or something and have to turn back.

Great tips, thanks. I'll definitely do some small scale practice runs to make sure I dont forget anything.
