I'm travelling to China, Beijing not too long from now and I heard the people there were quite rascist. Is this true? And do they discriminate blacks and whites or just one of the 2?

Thanx!

they discriminate against "lesser" asians. vietnam, etc

They hate non-Chinese Asians (especially the Japanese) mostly. They'll be scared of blacks from reputation, though some of the more adventurous girls might go after them. Beijing itself isn't quite so freaked out by outsiders as the more rural areas.

As to whites, it'll depend a lot more on what you're like. White women will probably have a lot more trouble being accepted than white men. Basically, if a white guy avoids being a stereotypical white guy, he'll do OK.

But regardless, being non-Asian, or moreover non-Chinese, in Beijing makes you a mark instantly. Watch your fucking wallet and pockets.

Been to Beijin twice in the past 2 years and I can tell you:

It's fine, really. As long as you have a translator (or a very good knowledge of mandarin) then you'll find yourself at home. People may stare due to your uncommon face or skin color, but other than that it's fine. People in fact act nicer to you due to this - There aren't as many foreigners in China as we like to imagine. During a 3 month trip I must've seen 3 or 4 foreigners, tops.

As long as you are well educated, dress properly and behave in an orthodox manner you won't have any problems in Beijing.

I live in Beijing, and I'm not Asian. I see non-Asian people every single day. Maybe you haven't been for a while but there really are plenty of foreigners here.

You're a lot less likely to get stared out too nowadays. You'll probably get bothered to buy something but just keep walking and they get the message.

Short of being Japanese, people in Beijing aren't particularly racist. You may feel you're getting rude treatment if you don't speak Chinese, but it's more that they don't want to deal with the hassle than anything else.

Big emphasis on language skills coming here though, unlike what they show on TV most people here hardly know anything past hello in English and are too intimidated to talk due to lack of practice and loss of face.

>Short of being Japanese

I work at Epcot in Disney World. Being that way, I work with a lot of people from all over the world, including China.

I've asked a lot of them about the whole China-Japan grudge, and they all tell me it's non-existent and only a scant few World War II survivors have any serious racist tendencies towards Japanese at all.

Impressive. Calling me a liar based on second had experience via Chinese people who aren't actually in China.

I'm not saying everyone's racist. Plenty of younger people love Japan's pop culture. But there are just as many who when I said I was going to Japan, were insulted, and let me know they would never consider go there, as Japanese people are evil and desecrated China without so much as an apology.

That being said, plenty of Chinese people in Japan.

When I was in Beijing there were a shitton of Japanese tourists.

Also, I swear to god that the people in Beijing are paler than white people.
