so /trv/, I'm planning to spend six months backpacking after uni
mostly interested in seeing China, Laos Cambodia and Vietnam, but I wouldn't mind travelling to China on the Trans-Siberia Railway and seeing a bit of Russia and Mongolia, not many countries but I want a good length of time to see each one

anyone here know how much should I save for this? I understand hostels are pretty cheap in south east Asia so I'm thinking around £3000, is that enough? more than I need?

Travel into and out of Russia is a bitch, not other way of putting it.

You must get a visa from a "sponsor" within the country (Uni, travel agency, work), then apply for an Entry and Exit visa with exact dates. Many trains running westbound from Russia arrive at their destination a little late due to the combination of time lag and slow transport. If you're even two seconds beyond your visa time they police will detain you.

Try Wikitravel. Although run by a bunch of Nazi conservatives, it has some good articles.

well that sounds shit
might allow an extra day for travel or something, if the train runs late I'm fine, if it's on time I can find a hostel for the night before crossing the boarder

mostly been using lonely planet, I'll have a look at wikitravel, cheers
