How long do long distance trips normally take? Anonymous
Like say, Cape Town to Cairo, or Istanbul to Beijing? Of course it depends on the distance, but how long are we talking here? For example, could I go the Silk Road route in two months?

Has anyone done any major traveling routes before?

They last as long as you want. You could take a plane and have them done in 6 hours. Or you take a year, stopping at every village along the way. It depends how much money you have, and how immersed you are prepared to be.

I have done trans-America and Canada in 3 months (road trip!), as well as the Trans-Siberian to beijing, followed by getting to Singapore. Trans-Siberian and Moscow/Petersburg was one month, and mooching round Asia for 3 months. I did the big cities, as well as some smaller ones. If you stick to the big cities, you may be safer (in terms of if something went wrong, you'll be able to find English speaking help), but you may be bored quicker, as they all become alike.

My recomendation for first time travellers is to do East Europe - its safe and its cheap. Going to Asia (not Japan, /jp/fags) is cheaper, but less security. Definately worth doing, but it may not be for everyone!

OP here. I don't think I was clear enough. I meant traveling over land, visiting several cities along the way, not simply going from point A to point B.
