How are the streets? Do you feel in danger at any time of day? What do the womens look like? Did you go shopping? If yes, was it loud and busy? And STINKY?! Did you see many people? Were the streets dirty? Did you talk with anyone?

I'm in sector I, which is the worst part of town. Still I'm sure it's nicer than 90% of the rest of Pakistan

Air smells like and fuel. Kinda nasty. I went to Rawalpindi last night (a bigger bordering city) and it smells like poop because of the open drains.

Yea there are people everywhere. They hang out on the traffic medians, pop up between cars... there's people everywhere. Feels really dense compared to Vancouver.

I don't feel like I'm in any real danger. The rest of Pakistan does feel a bit iffy though. Darra (the gun making town/tourist stop) is crawling with Taliban. So I probably won't stop by

What's his name and how much do you pay him, if you want to say? How many other people have guns there? Is it normal to see people on the streets with guns? What kind of clothing do you wear? Did you fit in?

It's a sausage fest - most women in my neighborhood stay home. The immigration officer at the airport did look like a young Natalie Portman with acne.

By and large I haven't been doing much here except work. So ya it's a cry for help. I'm supposed to join one of the embassy "on compound" social clubs next week on my employer's recommendation, but don't have many other ideas for what to do here. Except work.

His name is pronounced mamajon (not sure about the spelling) and he's a former army guy. We have no security escorts at our place so I don't know.

Things are quite cheap around here -
$1.11 for 1 L of apple juice
$1.60 for a cab ride that would cost maybe $15 in Canada
$100 / month for a servant who cooks / cleans

Islamabad is the most modern city in Pakistan so
I wear the stuff I wear back in Canada. Some people do look a little longer, but again, I live on the poorer side of Isb.

Only the escorts have guns. I saw three dudes with AKs in a strip mall parking lot at the first day that I got here. Some of my neighbors have guards with guns, so I suppose it's common.

Mama-jan?

As far as I know, "jan" is just an affectionate title, like Japanese "chan" or "kun", so his name is...

Mama...?

he's pashtun so that may count for why his name isn't as Islamic as Javed.

no. if you walk around in slippers and your feet get sweaty, it mixes with the dust. so it feels like you've stepped in shit. so I'm always on high alert, checking if i stepped in sewage or something.
