Where do you think is the most depressing place to live in?
>> Anonymous
Soviet Russia.

The place would live in ME.
>> Anonymous
Grozny or Pyongyang, Mogadishu, Monrovia, Maybe Kabul.

Average US suburban. Nowhere else in the world people consume so much antidepressants.
Look at this from the following side. When you live in some poor shithole country all you see is dirtpoor neighbours, so you assume living like this is normal. Hell, when I was a kid in post Soviet Russia, I thought it was pretty normal to have only one pair of shoes. And if you live in a wat-torned country, you are too anxious to stay alive, so you dont get depressed.
However, in open, unequal society like America you always watch on TV or simply outside lives of people who are hundred times "better" than you. They have money, fame, beautiful partners, while you are stuck in a house that you have to pay for another 15 years, with shitty job, ugly wife, bratty kids. The live on the screen is uncomparably better than you real life. Thus you feel depressed.
Some US ghetto would come up second.

Consumerism and poor culture are slowly killing the West.

I know people in Russia who are dirt-poor compared to the typical American, they live well enough and happily and had education far superior to nearly everyone in the US (but MUCH worse health system). Russia also has the wealth divide though, possibly even more than the US (saying a lot).

Anyway I would go with Kabul. Bett0r with freedom and democracy now, right?

their suicide rate is also astronomical, as is Western Europe's and Japan's. The United States is actually less depressed (by suicide rate, at least) than most of the world.

Stop with the American Beauty bullshit, American suburbs are a fine place to live and most people don't live their lives judging themselves against others. You're all a bunch of angsty teens who are depressed because they can't get laid, but instead of standing up to that you blame it on the culture you're parents raised you with. Shockingly people living alone with dead end jobs are way more depressed.

>>66671
Russia and the rest of Eastern Europe have crazy suicide rates (even higher than Japan's in some cases!), it sucks being poor while being educated enough not to just fall back on religion. Or it could just be the weather, I'm no psychologist.

The suburbs aren't even the most depressing places in America. Noone wants to live in the Plains states anymore so the old people with no family who never moved out usually end up killing themselves.

People don't get depressed because they don't have stuff, its all loneliness

The most depressing place I've lived was Ohio, USA. One year, there was no sun for 3-4 months in the winter. I hope to never experience something like that again.

lol, when i had read "most depressing place" i knew then somebody would say "russia"

I think it has more to do with never having to struggle, with never having anything real to complain about. It means that you must accept that you're where you are in life because you aren't good enough for anything better. Not unlike a black man being able to blame "the man" for his failures, a white guy has to just accept that he wasn't good enough for the job.

There was this video on youtube of a family in Afghanistan. There house was a hole in a rock wall, and inside was a stove carved out of the rock in the middle of the "room" and nothing else. The woman was a single mother and had like 3 or 4 kids. All they had was their stove.

I can't even imagine living like that.

So by that measure of "happiness", Japan must be fucking awful, right?
Doesn't quite work that way. Suicide, like various criminal activity, corruption, alcoholism etc is all related to the cultural DNA of a country. Even with a major and effective push to curb things like that they wouldn't change much. Eg if for some strange reason the Kremlin pushed for a crackdown on problem drinking, very little would change even if they tried very hard with a lot of support (which would diminish... excessive drinking is just the 'Russian' thing to do)

Don't underestimate cultural impact. Just because you can't quantify it (which technically makes Japan and the US the "happy" places to be by a quantified definition, obviously bullshit, both countries have serious social problems not that much worse than some developing nations)

Honestly, I feel the problem is not so much material wealth. A good question to ask yourself is 'how much material wealth need I have to be happy?'. Most likely you do not require that much to appreciate the best things in life - a good education, good sex with good girlfriends, culturally vibrant living is really the life blood of a good society. In fact despite the enormous material wealth brought on by the industrial economy, many people as far back as the 17th/18th centuries and earlier were in fact much happier and content than you might suppose.

TL;DR you can be pretty fucking rich and miserable and culture matters

I saw organic analogies, which are eugenic in thought, and eugenics is a rather progressive, albeit discredited, pseudoscience. "Right" is a totally arbitrary label, and really there is nothing to indicate this man is "rightist".

I live in Michigan and our winters are like that also. I know people like to go "Pussy, it's just cloudy, I like cloudy days" but they usually have no idea how fucking depressing it is to go for weeks without seeing sunlight and there's no snow to brighten everything up, just cold, drizzle and clouds. I'm not saying it's the most depressing place to live but still. I'd probably end up killing myself if I lived in Ireland or Scotland.
