/trv/ Amerifag here, looking to expatriate, for real, but I'll get to the point: where should I move? I have a huge list of potential places, from Vancouver to Prague to possibly even Australia (I am aware that it is a country, not a city), but can't even come close to a decision. I'm not a typical Amerifag who gets butthurt if I can't find a McDonalds or drive a massive SUV, so that won't be a problem. Things I'm looking for include:
-a city of decent size, in the millions
-temperate climate, if possible
-freedoms similar to those America once enjoyed, if possible
-modern culture, not stuck in the dark ages, not religiously fanatical, etc.
-cheap cost of living

Thanks in advance.

Fucking die so you don't emigrate to my country

You won't have as many freedoms, and no country will accept you because you have nothing to offer the country.

Japan is looking for foreign workers and they're implementing policies for giving foreign workers incentives to stay... SO LEARN MOONSPEAK AND GET PAID LOTS.

Just move to Canada, if you go anywhere else you'll probably end up doing something wrong and you'll get lynched.

I'd do it quick though. That new income tax penalty for renouncing your citizenship is gonna be a bitch.

What are the politicians like, the main reason I'm leaving the US is the great possibility of getting a black president, this country is lost.

Sad but true: America's one of the cheapest places to live right now. Everything in Europe costs about the same amount /numerically/ but the Euro is worth 60% *more* than the US dollar right now. Also taxes in Europe are higher, and fuel is ridiculously expensive (although you said you could live w/o a car). The UK's even "worse." Australia's dollar isn't valued quite as high, but the costs of basics like fuel, food, and even water are comparatively high and rising. Canada's dollar is valued similarly to the US's, but like Europe taxes are higher. Canada would be an easier move, too.

You also forgot another option: New Zealand. Although there's only one "major" city (Auckland), it's cheaper than Europe, UK, or Australia.

Sadder but true-er: no halfway-civilized city in Europe is, was, or ever has been cheap to live in. When the first French franc plummeted in value to $0.0001, Paris was still more expensive than New York. When the British pound dropped from $4 to $2.80 to $1.05 in the span of a decade a decent flat in London would still run you more than a large home in San Francisco.

I've looked at "city data" statistics and they claim that there are a few cities in Europe that are fairly cheap, is that all bullshit?

I can't tell you how bizarre it is to see my hometown pop up on a suggest list of cities to move to in Europe.

That being said, Norman's a nice place to raise your kids, but other than that, it's just a beautiful cesspool.

Melbourne, Australia.

Good coffee? check.
Sexy women? check.
Public transport? check.
Never freezes, rarely boils? check.
Ten dollar "pot and parma"? (glass of beer and chicken parmaggiana), check.
Want to eat a different culture's food every day? check.
Riverfront and oceanfront? check.

It has everything I want, seriously.
I'm probably going to try and organise a permanent stay visa ASAP.

Oh just get over it. You aren't losing any freedoms you were using anyways.

You probably aren't a chick, so you don't have to worry about your right to choose.
You'll never lose your ability to own a gun, and if you don't have any... buy some.

There's nothing wrong with the US.
All you need to do is work until you die with no benefits, and be a good little consumer.

Vienna is expensive, but probably my favorite city in the world. Also, pretty much every major city in Benelux is win. Rotterdam & Bruxelles especially. Wellington, New Zealand is probably my second favorite city in the world. (pic related) It's only like 400,000 people, but its fantastic.
