Hey /trv/. Has anyone here learnt Russian ? I'm interested in learning it and it seems really hard.

How hard is it?

Picture semi-related , Ukraine was once part of Russia.
>> Anonymous
The only languages harder than russian are probably Chinese and Japanese.

You'll shit bricks before you learn it.
>> Anonymous
I had to learn it in school for a few years. It's really like any western language except with a different alphabet. But you won't be in for any real surprises if your native language is English, German, French or the like.
>> Anonymous
>>68871
Japanese is easy as fuck and grammatically Chinese is incredibly simple
>> Anonymous
>How hard is it?

It has 6 cases (nominative, genetive, dative, accusative, instrumental and prepositional), this isn't easy. Also every noun has its own gender and you must remember it. But only 3 times, no articles and problems about pronounce of written words.

>The only languages harder than russian are probably Chinese and Japanese.

You are wrong. There are many tongues harder - Finnish, Basque etc. Even many Slavic languages are harder - Polish, Hungarian, maybe even Ukrainian (it has also vocative case).
>> Anonymous
>>68895
>Also every noun has its own gender and you must remember it

Wut. There are three genders, and you don't need to memorize them 90% of the time.

Russian isn't impossible to learn but don't expect to get very far if you don't put a lot of time and effort into it.

Grammar can get fairly tough. there are more exceptions than rules, and you have to remember all of them. Its a language that is easy to learn at first, but hard to master.

I meant that gender of noun sometimes are illogical. Also declension of noun depends on gender - for example (nominative - genetive) ???? - ???? (horse, male gender - horse's) but ???? - ???? (salt, female gender - salt's).

>>68895

Of course, I meant "tenses".

The gender of nouns is always logical, you just have to know several hundred years of east Slavic linguistic history.

To everyone else:
Russian belongs to the Indo-European language family and it's as close to other European languages as it gets. Granted, for native English speakers it is more difficult to learn Russian than, lets say Dutch . But still, the basics are the same and it's not like you're learning Sanskrit or Vietnamese.

Russian reporting in... ask me anything :)

i think the hardest thing for non-slavik people is to pronounse letter Ya (?).
if its by it self, or in front of the word it sounds like Ya, BUT if it goes after consonant (err Opposite of Vowel), it DOESNT sound like YA, it just makes Consonant SOFT, and then sounds like A.

All people that learned russian as a second language make this mistake... it's so funny though :)

nah, Westerners choke over ?, ?, and the hard ?.

Now, I understand Russian almost perfectly due to three things: speaking natively a related Slavonic Languge, learning Russian in school, and years of watching the Discovery Channel in Russian. I can probably speak it, too, to a degree.

Now, cases and the fucked up ways of forming plural nouns make it a relatively hard language to speak correctly. Not too hard, though. Also, Russians speak it in a very different manner than the one spoken on TV and taught in school. But I guess that is true for most languages.
>> Anonymous
Do u know, that russian lang, has a worldest large quantity of dirty words.

I'm just about to get started on learning it as I'd like to study there at some point in the future. I've always thought the language was beautiful, my only worry - and yes, I know this sounds like such a typical Western thing - is the country itself. I find it quite... intimidating, like the sort of place where I'd never feel safe (compared to say; Britain, Norway, Hong Kong, etc). Nevertheless I'm determined to make it there.

b) There are about 10-15 dirty words in ?ussian. Of course you can combine or change them, resulting in thousands variations, such as

What I meant was, you don't need to memorize the gender of most nouns because you can plainly see what their gender is by the ending. In French and German and some other languages, you just have to know, there's no way to determine the gender of a noun other than learning and memorizing.

You just said GDP, not GDP per capita. The GDP of a country does NOT triple in 8 years, that would be a ridiculous growth rate.

The China Russia border is the largest in the world? It's not even close. Just consult a map.

I can guarantee you that there are NOT 10 million Chinese immigrants in Russia; why would they be pouring into the country anyway? The standard of living in Russia is not significantly better than China's (especially the far eastern portion of Russia, which is desolate compared to the far away, more developed western region), and there would be a large language and cultural barrier to overcome. It just makes no sense. Back up this claim.

The one about Russian birth rate being low seems true though, congratulations on one decent statistic. As I recall, the Russian government is offering cash bonuses for people to have children.

For work, of course. The Russian Far East is depopulating fast and workforce is urgently needed.

>As I recall, the Russian government is offering cash bonuses for people to have children.

Too bad they don't seem to be working. There has recently been a slight grow in the birthrate, but that is attributed to the coming of age of the post-1990 population boom. Population growth in Russia remains negative.
>> Anonymous
There are an estimated 1 million illegal Chinese immigrants in Russia, out of 10 million total illegal immigrants:
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/01/15/news/migrate.php
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/1740777.stm

As for their population shrinkage, it is indeed a big problem, but things have been improving. According to stats from their state statistics website gks.ru, in 2006 from the period of January to August, the population fell by 408k, in 2007 by 195k, and this year by 125k. That doesn't count illegal immigrants. This is due to three obvious factors: Increased birth rates, decreased mortality rates, and increased legal immigration. Also, there is already very little emigration from Russia to other countries right now, in contrary to the awesome 90s.

>>72145
I dunno what the comparison was supposed to be but the GDP has exploded with the oil price (and investing the huge amounts that made)

That's a myth, it just looks that way because their economy was in collapse during almost all of the 90s. The economy hasn't grown parallel with oil prices, and oil prices don't contribute that much to GDP growth. They just make up for a lot of the governments revenue.

>The economy hasn't grown parallel with oil prices, and oil prices
>oil price

Check natural gas prices. Of course, you won't, because there is no global natural gas price. Today, the technology of sending gas basically allows the seller to set the price at whim. If you don't have liquid gas terminals, you can't just buy gas from elsewhere - you can't build a new pipeline in a week while in the case of oil you can just ask for oil deliveries from another country by tankers.

It's gas, not oil, that made Russia (relatively) wealthy.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>73756
No offense man but you have no idea what you're talking about. Gas goes for about $6 per gallon right now, which is dirt cheap compared to oil. It's been fairly consistent over the years.

They have more of it, sell more of it, yet it still only gives them a fraction of the revenues that oil does.
>> Anonymous
>>73761

Words fail me.

THERE IS NO global market for natural gas. Russia differentiates gas prices according to how it likes a given government. Western Europe pays a different price, Georgia pays a different price, Ukraine and Belarus also pay different prices. Gazprom, the gas monopolist, is a section of the Russian government and a neo-colonial version of the East India Company.

"The Russian economy so far remains commodities-driven despite its growth. Payments from the fuel and energy sector in the form of customs duties and taxes reached 3.1 trillion rubles ($128 billion) last year, or *nearly half of the federal budget's revenues*.

Besides, a substantial share of companies in manufacturing and trade process oil and market oil products, and are therefore part of the fuel and energy sector. Raw materials and fertilizers make up the overwhelming majority of Russia's exports. Machinery and equipment account for only $17 billion of the $352 billion export revenues."

That's not true at all. Russia just hiked their prices up to what they were charging everyone else. Ukraine used to pay less than Russia did for its own gas. Go away and stop ruining this thread.

no you wanna cooperate with them because no european country besides the USSR/Russia had a strong standalone military since WW2. i dont know what youre talking about with the church/govt thing, and ALL slavs are european. its a european race.

The Rurik dynasty descends from Vikings; the Russian people do not.

Everything that was great about Ruthenia was destroyed by Mongols 800 years ago. And mentally you've remained Mongols and slaves ever since.

Oh sorry, I can't help you over the sound of Alexey II blessing the rifles of soldiers going to fight in Chechnya.

>no you wanna cooperate with them because no european country besides the USSR/Russia had a strong standalone military since WW2.

Yeah, because Americans protected us. They also rebuilt us and gave us a functioning economic system. Just compare Western Europe and former USSR and you'll see.

Stop saying "you", I'm not Russian. And as far as the Mongol invasion goes, aside from killing lots of people and forcing Russia to pay them money, they didn't mix with Russians at all aside from a few locations around Mongolia. Russian Mongols are called Tatars, and they make up a very very small portion of the population.

Long story short, you're an ignorant Russophobe and you have absolutely no grasp of history at all.

insult us all you want, youre still just butthurt and calling us slaves (although it was most of europe under our control not the other way around) because we kicked your asses, basically conquered you and you couldnt do anything about it. besides the USSR noone in mainland europe managed to stand up to the nazis, and after the USSR beat the nazis noone could stand up to them.

And as far as the Mongol invasion goes, aside from killing lots of people and forcing Russia to pay them money, they didn't mix with Russians at all aside from a few locations around Mongolia. Russians with Mongol blood are visibly and physically different and they make up a very small portion of the population.

I didn't say they mixed. What I did say was that they made Russians the paranoid slaves thay have remained till this day.

> you're an ignorant Russophobe

And you're a Kremlin-sponsored Russophile. Go vandalise an Estonian or Ukrainian embassy or something.

Oh, there is your problem. You are from a country that never really had to deal with Russia. Explains a lot.

Have you read the Rusfags' comments? "We are kewl cus we kicked ur asses lol?" They are proud that they once were the most oppressive regime in the world's history, second only to Adolf's IIIrd Reich. But, of course, you don't find anything wrong with that. Die.

>>74269

My country suffered both soviet and nazi occupations. I think I have a right to say it because we've seen them both in action and I hate them both equally. Ordinary Russians miss the USSR. If you can't deal with that, it's not my problem.
>> ???? !KvR8flbOqg
Canadafag, i applaude you.
>> ???? !KvR8flbOqg
>>74273

Ordinary Russians have good reasons for that too. On average people here lived better under Soviet authority.
>> Anonymous
>>74276

Cool. So how about they do not try to impose that again onto nations that do not want it? If a country wants to cooperate with Russia, great, but if it doesn't, leave it the fuck alone. You can't even grasp such a simple concept.
>> ???? !KvR8flbOqg
>>74277

Well youre not exactly leaving Russia alone either. Russia does a RETALIATORY attack on Georgia, first thing the Polish president does is meet up with the butthurt balticfags and offer the newly-butthurt georgia their condolences.
>> ???? !KvR8flbOqg
>>74279

and of course bash Russia without stopping for a moment to think that georgia fired first (even condoleeza rice admitted it) and that georgia broke a UN mandated ceasefire agreement, fired artillery on an urban area.

>>74279
> Russia does a RETALIATORY attack on Georgia

According to the international law, Abkhazia and SO are parts of Georgia. Would you like it if the US gave out passports to Chechens and then attacked Russia to protect the rights of the American people?

>first thing the Polish president does is meet up with the butthurt balticfags and offer the newly-butthurt georgia their condolences.

PROTIP: The President in Poland can't do shit and ever since the 2007 elections there's been a conflict between the government and the president who should run the foreign policy. Plus, if you really want to know, the current President has terribly low approval ratings.
>> ???? !KvR8flbOqg
>>74281

Any country has the right to retaliate when its peacekeeping mission is attacked. Russian troops were there with a mandate from the UN, Georgians opened fire on the city that Russian peacekeepers were in without alerting anyone. Russia has every right to attack.
>> Anonymous
>>74280
>and of course bash Russia without stopping for a moment to think that georgia fired first

The fact that SO was performing provocations supported by the Russian "peacekeeping" force had of course NOTHING to do with it.

That said, I did NOT support Tbilisi's war in Abkhazia and SO and even though Tbilisi was provoked, it was obvious that it wanted to be provoked. But stop pretending you're better. You wanted to get rid of Saakashvili and the only reason why you didn't topple him is because of the US intervention.
>> Anonymous
And yeah, to be honest, I do agree that Russia had a right to attack and I was expecting it. But you couldn't have just stopped in Abkhazia and SO. You wanted to "teach the Georgians a lesson" and THAT was unnecessary.
>> ???? !KvR8flbOqg
>>74284

True we did want to topple him. We dont need a NATO encirclement.
>> ???? !KvR8flbOqg
>>74285

Well they did have to go further for the purely military reasons of not letting the Georgians simly amass troops at the border again but I agree that it would have been better if we hadnt occupied territory outside of South Ossetia and Abkhazia for so long.
>> Anonymous
>>74286

Why are you afraid of the NATO anyway?
>> ???? !KvR8flbOqg
>>74288

The organisation was originally created to counter the USSR and now imho its switched to countering Russia.
>> Anonymous
>>74289

Against the USSR? Sure. Against Russia? Maybe, depends on what Russia does. In fact, NATO does not even know what it wants to be and nobody knows what will become of it after Dubya is gone.

And for the anti-Russian bias in post-communist countries - currently Russia is not doing anything to prove them wrong. There is problems with the Crimea in Ukraine already and what guarantee can you give to the Estonians that you will not repeat the Georgian scenario over there? What is it with this policy of cutting off gas supplies to governments you don't like? What is it with this anti-missile shield hysteria? do you know that most Polish people opposed it too, but they changed their minds because of the war in Georgia? For us it's a deal anyway, we allowed the US to build it only because they obliged themselves to modernise our military.

Also, what is it with these religious nutjobs in Iran, you want them to go nuclear that much? Why did you close down the British Council outposts, you honestly think they are spies or something? What's the deal with Litvinienko, what about Politkovskaya?

You know you will have a problem with China one day, so why are you trying to scare everyone else off?
>> Anonymous
>>74295

The majority of crimea WANTS to become part of Russia

cutting of gas to ukraine on the new year was because a deal hadnt been reached on price.

you want us to send an envoy to estonia and say DONT WORRY WE WONT INVADE YOU? would sound a bit fishy to me

about Iran, its not a problem for russia if they go nuclear, they wouldnt attack us anyway, it would be tel aviv most likely (not jerusalem its holy for muslims too)

about politkovskaya its a shame and there should be more press freedom

litvinenko i dont like at all

the hysteria over the missile sheild is because the original plan for 10 missiles can later be expanded to a number that would injure russias nuclear deterrant.
