I was there last Oct.

Bangkok has the worlds largest mall and the worlds largest outdoor market. Vist both!
If you've time go for a foot massage (which is actually a foot+leg), I was quite surprised about how relaxing it can actually be.

Before you enter a night time Taxi you must agree a price. Do not agree to his first price. And 400 Bhat is too expensive for a 1 mile trip, as I discovered.
If you enter without agreeing be to a cost be ready for a random figure.
Also - Airport to City should cost no more than 140-160 Bhat. Again, agree this cost before entering the cab be it night or day.

Is there any other part of that massage?

if you do go chasing whores, be sure to check for traps.

I'll be in Bangkok for at least four months beginning June 1st (English teaching ftw). It seems like a city that has a lot to offer for /b/tards like me.

Meter taxis are fine though.. as long as they use the meter ("meter krap?" .. if they shake their head just get in the next one)

OP - where are you staying in Bangers? what area? What do you want to do?
>> Anonymous
>>32751
Not in the mall-based massage places.. but in the 'choose what girl you want to give you a massage' you can pick from a menu.
Annies - Sukhumvit Soi 33 seems to get good reviews.

@OP Tip everyone, but not too much (20 baht is plenty).. Its a country with tipping culture, so tip. See far too many dickheads who say "I don't come from a country that believes in tipping, so I don't tip". Fine.. enjoy your poor service and ultimately death..

Stuff:
- MBK (pronounced mahboonkrong) for all your knock-off watches / diesel jeans and other cheap shopping needs
- Siam Paragon - for all your high class 'they even have a floor for Italian supercars' needs
- Chatuchak Market - outdoor market (sunday, from memory)
- Suan Lum Night Bazar.. Thursday night, again from memory
- Thai Boxing - Lumpini stadium
- Pantip Plaza - Computer / knockoff DVD mall, if you're a bit /g/

Whores:
- Nana Plaza - 3 floors of gogo bars (ignoring Fantasia and a couple of others unless you like traps - the 'Rainbow' bars are all trap free and good... also Angelwitch for good shows)
- Soi Cowboy - a street of gogo bars. Almost no traps.. Generally show more flesh than Nana
- Sukhumvit Soi 33 - 'higher class' hostess bars

Clubs:
- Bed Supperclub (sukhumvit soi 11) - Awesome style, music etc.. bring a companion or a couple of friends
- Q Bar (again, suk soi 11) - A bit more generic, but a few freelancers work in there

Avoid:
- Patpong - unless you're going for just the market.. you will get ripped off in the 'show' bars and they mix up traps with girls in the gogos
- Khao San Road - Full of hippie dropouts who think they're in 'the real bangkok'. Loads of western clubs here, which are always packed and shite.

Beer bars:
- Morning Night, Sukhumvit Soi 4 - good atmosphere, rock music, friendly people
- Some down Sukhumvit Soi 7/1 - a couple of traps work freelance there though - pic related

Tailors:
- one every 2 yards, it seems. Don't let them sell you polyester and tell you its silk.
- New Landmark Boutique, just on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 4 is my favourite, but a little expensive..

Culture:
- Don't get taken to the Gem Factory, or get sucked into Gem scams ("you can sell this for way more in the States/whereever!!1") That goddamn place... ended up there like a dozen times when I was first in Bangkok.. like it was the New Jersey Turnpike in 'Being John Malkovich'
- Reclining Buddha (ignore scammers telling you its closed)
- Grand palace (again...ignore the scammers telling you its closed)
- Jim Thompson's House

General stuff:
- Be nice.. don't confront anyone or you will end up worse off
- Get used to people saying "mai pen rai", 'no problem' and shrugging off whatever you're annoyed at
- Smile lots.. Welcome to the Land of Smiles
- Dress nicely if you can stand it in the heat
- Do not take the piss out of their King
- DO NOT take the piss out of their King. Seriously. You can actually end up in prison or deported.
- Don't act like a penis
- If you're scammed on prices, just pay up and leave. There are lots of other places that will treat you better.

>- Do not take the piss out of their King

What if I want to challenge the King to a bout of fisticuffs?

- The floating market - You have to see this, but its much more serene and 'thai' before about 9:30AM, when coach-loads of people arrive and the thai people go into 'Tourism' mode... its a long way from downtown Bangkok, however, so you have to leave early. The thai name for the place is "Damnoen Saduak"
- River tour and temples - Take the skytrain or a taxi to Saphan Taksin and go to one of the tour guide kiosks, you get a tour of the 'klongs' (canals) round bangkok, a temple (Wat Arun), a snake farm and zoo... all in a traditional thai long boat (with crazy truck engine attached to the back)

Certain Death.. enjoy!

The canal tour was creepy. It's like the slums part of the city, a whole different world.

And Wat Arun is fuckign beautiful, it's worth going to see it on land, too.

But yes.. the canal tour is a bit creepy.. There's always someone washing their hair or bathing in the water (even though they do have a bath indoors).. I reckon probably just for the tourists!

I like the way there's roadsigns, telegraph lines etc down each side of the canals..

OP Here,

Some great suggestions, thanks. This is my third time in Bangkok, and I've been in Southeast Asia for the past 7 months, so I think I've got the basics down.

I'm looking for some unique experiences or off the beaten track sites.

Off the beaten track: Ask to go back to a girl's place rather than your hotel.
Welcome to the real Thailand!

Actually I did this a couple of years ago and was expecting the usual On Nut or Ratchada apartment but she lived out near Siam Dreamworld (near Dom Muang airport).

I was the only white face I saw for 2 days. It struck me that if they wanted to kill and bury me no-one would have any idea where to start looking. Still.. there's nothing quite like proper home-cooked thai food, sitting right in front of the one fan the house has got and sending the girl's sister down to 7/11 to pick up cigarettes and heineken..

Oh, also try getting recommendations from some of the Thais about Karaoke places, if you haven't already been to one. These are "this can't really be a bar of some kind" places hidden on the third floor of knackered old cockroach infested buildings.. Packed with people from about 2am onwards, cheap beer and funny music.
Also - only white face in the room.. so behave :)

Other than that, depending on how good your Thai is - I'd recommend one of the Thai 'massage' places. Loads on Rachada, but a couple down Rama III (get advice from a thai fella)..

Ground floor is normally some ornate cabaret affair (thai music, great seafood menus, comedy show etc) - hostess company etc. First floor and above, Fish Bowl 'pick a girl' Massage.
All of the chicks speak little or no english, and are much much more attractive than their Issan farmer's daughter counterparts in Nana or Cowboy... but they're designed for the Thai domestic market, so you have to speak the lingo and be very well dressed.
>> Anonymous
...so yeah.. Off the beaten track really means "need to speak good Thai", or take a tour guide, of sorts.
Hook up with a not-arrogant girl in a beer bar, say you're looking to go to somewhere the tourists don't go and let her take you.. There are a few weird Thai malls and things dotted around. (With a zoo on the roof, etc)

Problem is, the best 'off the beaten track' stuff is going to be outside of Bangkok... Issan (Udon Thani) and smaller places for instance.

I work in a hotel called Grand Inn, at Sukhumvit Soi 3 on Sukhumvit Rd. Come to see me if you need advise, just come in and ask to see the manager. I'm there 9-6

Hell I'll give you 10% discount on the room.
