I'm heading for Beijing and Shanghai for a few days and was hoping to get in some sight-seeing. Language is no issue as my wife is Chinese and fluent in a few dialects. Any recommendations?

Sorry - posted in your thread instead of new one... D'Oh!!

Do it.
At least attempt to make a daily budget for each country. Try and see how much you'd expect to spend per day, and make sure you have a way of getting funds during your travel.

Don't carry all your currency/valuables with you. Just have some extra money available in case of an emergency. The rest will be easier that way.

Oh, and try to have as much time as you can in each country.

This must be the dumbest idea I've ever heard.

I would recommend to go via Beijing and Mongolia through Russia. I wouldn't try to cross via the Middle East. And India via Nepal / Tibet wouldn't be advisable either.

To give this a bit more thought: I'd try to move somehwhat like this: From Vietnam to Hong Kong, to Shanghai, to Beijing, to Novosibirsk, to Moscow, to Vienna, to Paris.

If you're somewhat badass you could of course try through Cambodia, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Kasachstan and so on. But I don't think that's a good idea, really.

Do you know how fucking dangerous it is to hitch hike in Asia?

>>22295
It's not that dangerous in many places, and he didn't say anything about hitching.

OP, it's certainly doable, but you will spend a lot of time on trains. That's fine if you really like trains, but you might be better off just seeing one area, like Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, or get a eurail pass. Also seconding this:>>22278
you probably don't want to go through central asia if you've never been backpacking before. Middle eastern/central asian border regions are not known for being safe.

How long are you planning to go for?

I think backpacking is ok from vietnam to India.I've been backpacking in Vietnam and Cambodia, there is nothing to be afraid of (when you are used to travel in poor countries of course).
But Pakistan is now a forbidden area more or less for foreigners.
Try another route anyway

OP here. So basically, I need to
1) stick to taking trains in Asia
2) find ways to get cash during the journey
3) go through Russia instead of the Middle East.

The European part of the journey should be easy, I guess.

Thanks.

This reminds me of how in Spandau, Albert Speer ran a distance that ran from Germany to China across the Bering Straight all the way slightly into Mexico

You can get local flights that are almost as cheap as planes (Nok air etc).
If you get some kind of english teaching qualifications it's a good money spinner.
Look at wiki travel or the thorn tree site.

Russia then China is safer and easier than all the changing trains etc through the middle east, yes. Expensive but probably worth it, considering how many other trains you'd have to get.
Trans-Siberian is extremely expensive, though, so it might be worth looking into in detail

Uh? What do you mean by 'extremely expensive'? Can't you get the ticket for like 200-300$?

Did a backpack trip from india to france last summer. Quite intresting at least. Didn't do china, and also went through russia. The part through northern India/pakistan/Afghanistan was an overwhelming experience. I would strongly advice against it if you have difficulties keeping your cool in stressful situations. Sometimes, the difference between arrest and a helping hand can be a few well-picked words.

Backpacking through asia is stupid.

Enjoy your cancer-water.

Oh, and avoid the middle east. Maybe Lebanon would be nice, but it's out in the middle of no where.

Be careful crossing borders by land OP. Borders are usually the worst part of a country, it's where smuggling happens, wars start, rebels hide, police are often corrupt or suspicious and people are generally pretty far from the capital and might not be used to strangers.
