I'm an American used to a 6% sales tax, but I'm traveling to the UK. I hear there is a 17.5% VAT that I can be exempted from.
Anyone know the deal with that?
>> Anonymous
When asked to pay, yell "I'm American, I have special treatment". They'll understand.

Basically if you buy anything in the Uk and are taking it out the Uk you can apply to have the VAT refunded. Not sure where though

Eurofag here....the answer is the airport..but dont expect to get refunds to shit like candy bars ...there's a quota like any product above 100 euros/75 pounds or something liek that...
ps.If your going to the UK and your smoking get your fags from the US...fags are faking pricy here (about 9 dollars for a pack of 20)

Come to Norway. I think it's $15 per pack of 20s. Conversely, it's the same price for a pint in a pub.

Why is shit in Europe so much more expensive than it is in the US?
>> Anonymous
>>9175
Because we live like the capitalist pigs that we are, and therefore benefit from greatly reduced prices.

Because we're richer.

Differences in philosophy about taxation. European countries tax consumption heavily, but income lightly compaired to the US. A friend in the UK saw me filling out my income tax and marvled that the US must be a nation of accountants. He said it took him 20 minutes to do his income tax.

Eurofag again here...
Fags are expensive here in the UK because of the current "health policy"...whatever that means...
As for norway...well it is known that baltic region countries have a strong policy against booze...they were after all the only ones to have pohibition laws in europe during the 19th early 20th century...

I'm pretty sure the US doesn't have higher income taxes, but I wouldn't be surprised if their income tax system was simpler.

I'm in the 35% bracket for income tax.

What countries have a higher rate than that?

The Netherlands. Our highest bracket is 52% I think.

beers good though.

i know you are going to the UK, but this is
how it works in germany:
bigger stores (ask before buying!) will be able
to refund / deduct VAT right away (sometimes only
at a special service-register),
for smaller stores you can have it reimbursed from
the gov't, dont ask me where though. :)

Jesus, you people fail at Norwegian taxation. The more you make, the more you pay in tax per krone. Let's say you make 200.000 kroner a year, in which case you'll pay like 33% tax on the last krone, that is, the two hundred thousandth. Now, let's say you make 3.700.000 kroner (a lot). Now, you'll pay 100% on every krone after a point, not sure how high.

Really rich people juggle their money around though, so they hardly pay taxes at all.

Doesn't every country have those tax-free stickers and signs in stores where you don't have to pay VAT if you show your visa?

I don't think so, just over a certain wage like in other countries. It's the highest tax but you don't have to be earning much to be placed into that bracket.

Where the fuck do you drink?
That being said 37 for a pint at Möllers is still kinda pricy.
