Alo /trv/lrs,

Maybe you can help with this. I just am not excited about traveling to Sub-Saharan Africa. Even the places that I've thought about like the Ivory Coast, Kenya, and Zanzibar aren't really making me wet. Are there any great places to live out the extent of my visa? You know, places with a decent power grid and internets?

Avoid Somalia? Avoid SOMALIA? You may as well avoid everything the continent has to offer a tourist in the way of adventure, camaraderie, and steel on steel. Who wouldn't want to ride shotgun in the back of the local fedayeen outfit's ute, through the potholes of Puntland (and even the odd bit of paved road)? Cleaning out kalishnakovs with your shoelaces and canola oil and escorting those hashish convoys through pesky highwaymen territory (read: Ethiopian commando units).

Why, Somalia is just Jerry Bruckheimer's real life EXPLOSIVE theme park.

I went to Nairobi in Kenya once. It wasn't bad, but it's very hot and people try to steal things if you don't put shiny stuff away. Surprisingly, the hotel had a generously sized heated pool and it wasn't made of shit. Mauritius is fairly good too, I was on a beach and the hotel was great - not too underdeveloped looking either. But the only African country I can remember with the internet is Egypt. And Egypt was pretty fucking good actually. But that's not listed on your map thing. Overall, Africa just depresses me due to its horrible poverty.

Off the top of my head; you shouldn't visit Sudan, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Somalia (lol, condoms illegal), Zimbabwae or Swaziland. They're just atrocious.

Try South Africa. It's full to the brim of HIV/AIDS, but it's not AS poor, religious or at war. Cape Town is fun, apparently.

Do you have to go to Africa? Honestly, I wouldn't bother.

Egypt is North Africa, and definitely on my list. I don't _have_ to go to Africa, but I can, so I may if there's favorable conditions for me. Poverty doesn't usually depress me, because I don't have to go out, if I don't want to. Not really looking for the hotel thing, unless it's good and cheap. I'd rather get an apartment with internets and such.

Then I recommend Egypt, Sharm el-Sheikh is cool and internet seems to be easy enough to get. Pyramids are also worth seeing, but prepare to be hassled by fucking bizarre owners every minute. If you just ignore them they tend to go away. Staying in might be the best idea.

I've heard good things about Malawi. There is some risk of contracting tropical diseases (as is most places in Sub-Saharan Africa) and IIRC they're having some food problems.
