Yo /trv/. I'm going to be transferred to Brunei on a job for and representing a company. Honestly, I never heard of the place until yesterday when my boss hands me my new assignment. I'll be there for a few months or so but I have no idea what to expect there other than a quick check on Wiki that it's a muslim country.

Any good information or just anything related I need to know in general like food prices and culture and whatnot that some of you might know of?

tl;dr it's filthy rich and a very tiny little oasis of a country.

That's a pretty awesome looking boat. You'll probably enjoy your stay, based on this.

It's a Muslim country, so be wary. It's not as bad as most, though.

It's not in the Middle East you stupid piece of shit. Yes it's a Muslim country, but it's nothing like any of the others.

Pray tell how it's nothing like the others.

Just because it's not in the Middle East doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful. Brunei is relatively safe, it's definitely not even close to a warzone, but if you're an unrespectful, insensitive clod you will get assraped.

And most should be able to understand English seeing as it's only been independent from the UK since around 84 or 85, so you shouldn't have a huge difficulty adjusting

Enjoy finding out non-Muslims have shit for rights and that Muslims don't have a problem with abuse and violence.

Lived in Brunei for 7 years. The country population is mostly Chinese, Malay and other minority like Indians and White. And yes, most of the people do speak English.

Oh and its fucking boring since it has nothing to do. There are no such things as clubs and beers. You can only buy 12 cans of beers in Malaysia's territory, just outside the border line.

What sport we like to play in Brunei? Soccer is favoured by Malay while basketball is favoured by Chinese.

If you need more information, just ask.

There is no such thing as hate crime, the government doesn't give a shit what ethnicity you are, if you broke the law you're fucked. Oh and the story of your "misdeed" in Brunei will be quite a shock since the crime rate is fucking close to zero.

OP here. Beers and clubs are the things I least have to worry about. What about shopping? What stuffs and offers I can expect to find over there?

Looks like I don't have to worry about bringing the wife and kids along if the place is as safe as it sounds.

Awfully cheap I'll say, like any Asian countries. But problem is you can't really expect much in shopping. Lots of things that most of other countries enjoy, Brunei doesn't get them because due to the Imam's request, they don't want the people to be too materialistic. Yes you do get some good stuffs but very little and they arrive into the country extremely late.

As for your kids, may I recommend some good international schools such as JIS and ISB. I graduated from ISB 3 years ago and I have forgot lots of details of my school since I'm studying oversea now. But I'm sure you will find some help from the locals, especially from white people since all of them send their kids to these international schools.

I see... though I won't be the one to be disappointed by that... Though I'm curious of the flora and fauna over there since it's related to my job. How extensive is the forest and whatnot over there compare to, say, Singapore?
>> Anonymous
>>31596

Well, here's a fact. Never compare Singapore with any other Southeast Asian countries in term of forest since Singapore's is hardly called a forest due to the little land mass they have.

But the forest in Brunei is largely covered by rain forest shits. So basically, you're looking at a country full of forest. You can try this site, http://members.tripod.com/umaharan/Flora_Fauna/flora.htm.

It may not be an official one but it does state everything you need to know about it.

Brunei is full of forest. It's cheap as hell. If it's anything like the rest of South East Asia (Malay and Indo) it'll be fine. The country is muslim, but they don't care that you're not. Just be polite and people will like you

I can't specifically say what's my job *specifically* and who I work for but I hinted it earlier that it deals with eco-tourism. Though I can safely say that my job would have me finding out about the place and see what it has to offer in terms of the ecology and tourism and bring my findings back and let some of the eco lovers in the States know about it.

The tips been great so far: I got not problem with religion thingy and whatnot and from the sound of it, I don't think I should be. Entertainment probably won't be a problem but since I have way to deal with it. Though if the place doesn't have a good or proper internet connection, then *maybe* I'll have a problem.

If you are an American, oh you have no idea how bad the connection is. At least, its better than what the Ausfag in Ausfailia has.
