Obvious troll.

Russia is the most expensive country in the world now, numbnuts. If you haven't noticed yet, Russians still fucking hate Americans (Putin continues to use fear mongering of America as trying to crush Russian interests, which is also actually true, don't expect a warm reception)

Russian is very possibly the best language in the world, but it is fucking hard. And only ~10-15% of Russians know enough English to be helpful except for very basic cases.

Russian women are complicated. It isn't an easy topic but it mostly comes down to money. Which you have none of. So good luck, you're going to need it.

Russian universities are as expensive as elsewhere in the West, perhaps more so.

If you are not familiar with the language and culture you would be literally insane to go in your situation. You need a visa to go, as well.

Any Western European country would be MUCH more practical.

Ok OP, Russfag here
You are obviously an adventurous soul to want to move to another country with no degree or money. Is it possible? Sure, but get ready for some difficulties.

Working in Russia:
Do you at least have a college degree or are you just a high school graduate? You can try getting a job in teaching English since Russians all want to learn the language to make more $. A good private English tutor can make some very good bucks in Russia. I doubt you'll be able to get a job in the Russian equivalent of a high school though since you'll be required to pass a whole bunch of tests beforehand.

2. Living in Russia:
Unlike the other poster said, Russia is not "the most expensive country in the world". He is confusing Russia with Moscow, which is considered to be the most expensive city to live in in the world. Now is not the time to buy real estate in Russia: it's incredibly expensive and prices are only going up. There are however plenty of places in Russia where you can live incredibly cheaply but they are not in the centers of the major cities. General rule: the further you go to the east, the cheaper everything gets.

Russian women:
Yes, Russian women will most likely be pretty fond of you. You see women have to compete for men much more in Russia than they do in the US so they are less picky and more grateful to be in a relationship with a good guy. Some might be materialistic (like women anywhere though) and expect you to become their ticket overseas.

cont'd below...

cont'd from above

Other:
Russian language is hard for many people but nowhere near as hard as Japanese or Chinese. It might take you decades to learn to use it like a native speaker but you'll be ready for basic communication in a pretty short time once you get surrounded by the Russian people.

Moscow University is incredibly prestigious (think Harvard) and like other Russian Universities is free only to those who manage to pass a strict set of requirements. I don't know what their policy on admitting foreign citizens is. If you are highly intelligent and have the Russian citizenship, you can get in for free but keep in mind that the competition is going to be intense. Most Russians now have to pay to attend universities. This can get pricey but nowhere near as expensive (in absolute terms) as going to a school in the U.S.

Russian people are pretty warm and friendly. No, we do not hate foreigners. People might disagree with the politics of the American government but they are not going to take it out on you. Fair warning: if you are non-white there is a certainchance that you'll encounter hostile-minded neo-Nazis. They have been getting quite a bit of coverage in the mass media in the recent years. They typically target people who look like they come from the Central Asia or the Caucasian Mountains region.

Anything else, just ask.

they can vary. Some are sand, some are covered with small stones. I am from the north (St. Petersburg) and we have a couple beeches right in the city (I don't recommend other than for sunbathing since the water is pretty polluted for swimming) and a whole bunch of really nice beaches on the Gulf of Finland. It can get very warm in the summer so you definitely can swim comfortably.

best way of making friends in Russia? I don't know if there is the "best" way. If you make it to a university you will certainly get plenty of attention and will meet lots of people who are interested in you and your culture. Generally, hang out with younger people since they are bound to be more open to hanging out with a foreigner than the older people who have more things going on in their lives. The club and party scene has really took off in Russia in the past 8 years or so, once you learn some basic Russian those will be fun to go to.

My mom grew up in the Far East. The climate is superb there, the Pacific Ocean is nearby too. Beautiful sights to see. Some good might be more expensive over there since it's a pretty remote area. There are plenty of military babes in that area but you probably won't be able to find a job there as a foreigner. You might experience quite a bit of "culture shock" in the Far East since it's not quite as "civilized" as the European Russia but it's definitely getting better with time. One frequent complaint from the poeple who live there is that there are periodic electricity cut offs as well as the shutdowns of the water heating stations.

Women - pretty hot, I have no complaints. Don't be scared of the really old women in their 60s and 70s - I doubt the current generation is going to end up looking like this. Russian women tend to "dress to impress" and have an incentive to take pretty good care of themselves (to land a guy of course). Women in Russia often complain about the shortage of the eligible bachelors who are decent people and have some goals in life. I am sure they will like you just fine.

Russian food is pretty calorie rich and "heavy", it really fills you up. Get ready for lots of soups, cereals, cooked vegetables, meat products and bread. In the past decade or so fast food took off quite a bit so if you really start to dislike the traditional Russian cuisine you can still find plenty of Big Macs and pizzas for sale.

Work ethic - many Russians are regrettably somewhat unorganized and quite a few people I know have pretty poor attitudes to getting the job done right. On the other hand now that Russia is so open to the worldwide economy the company bosses have really cracked down and are making sure to hire only the best workers. Lots of people work really hard and put in long hours as well.

Neonazis - I am not sure how many of them there really are but they do get quite a bit of media attention and the government is criticized for not doing more to stop the attack motivated by the racial/ethic hatred (there is a special Penal Code article specifically for that type of crimes). They tend to attack the people who they perceive as illegal immigrants (mostly from Central Asia) or those they consider as the enemies of the Russian people (primarily Chechens, Ichkers and Dagistanis). If you are white and do not do anything to antagonize them then you are pretty safe.

Russian people are highly liberal in the Western sense of the world. We do not have a death penalty. Abortion is legal. Gay marriage isn't though and Neo-Nazis have been known to attack those who participate in the gay parades. We have complete freedom of religion and the separation of Church and state is a part of the Constitution. We have comparatively few laws which intrude into a person's personal life. Many people are atheists but the Orthodox Church has been growing in influence in the past decade or so.

There are plenty of high speed Internet Service Providers in the European part of Russia, not sure about the Asian part but I would guess you can get dial-up pretty much anywhere in the world now. Software is widely pirated so don't bother paying for Windows/Photoshop/etc when you come to Russia. It's basically a free-for-all on the internet for us as we don't have RIAA or MPAA so all the music and movies you want are free too. Child Porn can be found too if that's your kinda thing.
>> Anonymous
>>70874
does that mean you suffer from depression? we are very lax about the prescription drugs here in Russia, you can score pretty much anything and noone will bother you.

>> Anonymous
>>70882
lol you like milfs?
I am not sure how interested they'd be in you since by this point of their lives they are either married or looking for a guy with a well-paid job to support her and the kids. Also, the mindset of that generation is pretty different from the mindset of the younger people.
Just focus on the younger women, there are plenty of them and they have a much more "care-free" attitude about life than do their parents who grew up in the Soviet Union.

A lot of good advice in this thread even if OP is a troll as I suspect he is.

This is very true. And above all else, don't even think of moving to / working in Russia without plans to learn the language. I doubt it's possible unless you hire a personal translator to follow you around.

I'm a black guy, studying Russian and wanting to visit Moscow for awhile sometime in the near future.

Any tips to avoid getting my ass handed to me by the neo-nazis?

Would women be more reluctant to speak to me?
>> Anonymous
>>71039
I wouldn't worry about it too much. The black people in Russia are not very numerous but they do exist (most of them probably live in Moscow since that's where many of them attend universities). There is a university in Moscow called PFUR which has a very extensive exchange program under which many students from Africa (and many other places) came to study in Russia. Here is their website: http://www.pfu.edu.ru/

The vast majority of people in Russia are not racists even though we might not be very politically correct. While the attacks by skinheads/Neo-Nazis get quite a bit of publicity in the mass media it does not mean that every non-white person should fear for their lives. Just make sure you follow your common sense and you will be perfectly fine. Russia is an incredibly diverse country with millions of people who do not look like the ethnic Russians. It's not as safe as it was in the USSR but the chance of running into trouble is very small if you have a good head on your shoulders.
Some foreigners might find Russia to be a cold country at first but don't be discouraged - Russian people make great friends once you get to know us.
>> Anonymous
Also, I don't think women will avoid you either. Moscow today is a very cosmopolitan place. It's nothing like it used to be in the USSR. People travel abroad frequently and there are plenty of foreigners in Moscow as well. Many women in Russia today are actually somewhat disappointed by what they see as the shortage of the interesting and eligible young men. I don't think that they will act snobbish to you. There are some gold diggers too though, so watch out for those. Are you from the US, Britain or somewhere else? US/British/European men usually get plenty of interest from women in Russia.

how to avoid getting your ass kicked in russia as an american:

1. be sure to go in with clothes that have the american flag on it.

2. Be sure to scream USA! USA! as much and as loud as possible

3. the food served in all of europe (not only russia) is poisonous. be very wary, and when in doubt just go to a mcdonalds

4. wear bulletproof vests at all times. Russians shoot eachother alot.

5. be sure to loudly complain about how everything is un-american in russia. the people will appreciate your criticism.
