I lived in Boston for a couple years. Actually, it was a pretty cool city to live in, if cold (there are always a couple weeks in February that just suck). You don't need a car if you live there. Get good winter gear, including a scarf.
Craigslist is one way to find housing that is good for cheaper stuff especially. Arrange what you can beforehand. I suggest going on one trip to scout (look at places to live, interview for jobs). Don't move into anything blind. You can either do two trips (scouting and moving) or do one (if you have someone who can send you your stuff, for example), but if you do one you'll have to get it all together quickly and it may not be perfect.
