Free Water Survey Anonymous
This may be unorthodox, but I have a pretty specific request.

It's not difficult, just reply to this thread with any countries you've visited or lived in, and whether or not you are given a glass/cup of water for free with your meals out, and any other information.

Example:

Japan:
Yes - Free glass of water and free refills. Glass of water is given usually before you order.

United Kingdom:
No - They make you pay for all drinks, and overcharge for them too. It's an important revenue stream.

Cheers.

Here in Kansas we have to fight bears to get water.

Canada:
Free. Anywhere. You can ask for a glass of water at a fast food place and you'll get a cup. With ice too.

Restaurants will give you a pitcher of ice water usually when you sit down, and you can get it refilled anytime.

Bottled water not so much, but ice water, from the tap, or from the machine is almost always, universally free from what I've seen.

France (live here) - Free everywhere (over 9000 restaurants)

Italy - Free

England (tourist trap in London) - I had to paid for water

But I think water is free everywhere except if you eat in a tourist trap (everywhere too unfortunately)
>> Anonymous
Its free everywhere but the UK

but every restaurant overcharges for beers and sodas
>> Anonymous
UK places will actually charge you for tap water
>> Anonymous
Argentina - You can ask for free water almost anywhere and they'll give it to you, but it's frowned upon in restaurants.
>> Anonymous
UK here:

In 85% of UK places you can get free tapwater. However, specify for tap water.
>> Anonymous
>>79482
UK in 100% of places you get free tap water, its illegal to charge for it. Just make sure you specifically say tap water because they'll charge you for table water which is just tap in a bottle basically.

Bonus! if your somewhere like yorkshire (not in a city area) the water tastes FUCKING AMAZING, fresh from fucking moorland reservoirs. Beats the shit out of bottled water
>> Anonymous
>>79470

not just beers and "sodas" you will be overcharged for everything in England, its part of being there.

>UK in 100% of places you get free tap water
I've seen plenty of places that say on the menu "we do not serve tap water"

I've also never, ever, ever even seen anyone ask for tap-water anywhere. Maybe people are too polite or something.

Anyway, I prefer the Japan and Mediterranean Europe method, where you are given a water as soon as you step in and sit down.

In Germany, the waiters stare at you if you order a glass of tap water.
>> Anonymous
>>79599
Yeah, fucking Germans, man. I hate that carbonated water they all drink, and they all think that tap water is unfit for human consumption or something. Ask for "stillwasser, bitte" and they STILL bring you a fucking tiny bottle of fizzy water that tastes likes shit and costs 1 euro.

They look confused because people only order tap water to give to their dogs or something.

You'd think they'd be dehydrated as fuck in that nation considering the complete lack of public water fountains in the country, and all the beer and liquor they drink everyday...

I know I was, I'd have to drink from the faucet in the bathroom if I didn't want to die from heat stroke walking around in the summer.
>> Anonymous
Yeah living in germany I have gotten used to asking for "still wasser" in france I believe you have to say "no gas" I just tell them it's for my dog.
>> Anonymous
fizzy water is fucking disgusting

Weird. When I was in Italy I found that ordering water from the tap didn't show up on my bill. They only charged me when I didn't specify that I didn't want the bottled stuff.
>> Anonymous
USA, Canada, England -- free tap water-- "safe"
France, Italy -- fuckers will charge 5 euro for a bottle in a hotel resturant
China, Mexico -- Don't touch the water or milk-- drink beer (it's been purified) :)

>France, Italy -- fuckers will charge 5 euro for a bottle in a hotel resturant

France??? What the hell are you talking about? What kind of restaurants to do go to?
>> Anonymous
OP here

The fact you can ask a waiter to turn on a tap is a moot point.

I want to know if they give you a glass of water
>> Anonymous
In Hong Kong it depends on where you go but a lot of places give you free water in a glass (which they keep refilling for nothing). It's sort of expected that you will order something else with it anyway, i mean, who orders just water for a meal?
>> Anonymous
Brazil - almost everywhere free water.
Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala - most places free water.
>> Anonymous
>>79669
but you can't drink the water in those places unless it's bottled

Tap water in the UK? You might as well drink water from the Thames.
>> Anonymous
Slovenia:
Sometimes. Depends on which restaurant you go to. Mostly yes but sometimes they would just stand there and ask if you want a litre or half a litre then show up with bottled water

I have had tap water from Morocco, Peru, Brazil, Kenya, Jordan (although they are fairly good with water quality)

tap water is usually fine, but that doesn't mean I would drink water that came from a township in south africa or the slums around Rio.
>> Anonymous
>>79687
Isn't Rio all about slums, actually?

Gotta love Canada. we have more water than we know what to do with.

Australia - Never not had water when dining somewhere respectable
McDonald's - You have to pay unless you go to the bathroom
Indonesia - They don't serve water, they serve liquid disease
Iceland - Free ice
>> Anonymous
99% of the US it's expected to be available. some of my friends get a little testy if the water *doesn't* stay refilled. (we usually just ask for a pitcher to preempt that)
but that's only at the sit-down restaurants, cheap eateries w takeout and the like seem to default to bottled more and more. (in the appropriate-branded coke / pepsi supplied coolers no less. must be some kinda package deal.)

also, i wouldn't bank on the tap being particularly non-BLEAGH tasting. we're pretty fixated on killing microbes and beasties, so it'll be UV'd and chlorine'd to high hell and back.

Water is not necessarily free in all Japan.
Kagawa: Water is precious. You have to drink the soup of Udon instead.
Ehime: You can drink free Mikan orange juice instead of water.
