Hi Guise. Going to Hong Kong next week. What should I not miss? Should I travel to Shenzhen?
>> Anonymous
Shenzen is kinda interesting. Though, if you're planning on leaving HK, be sure to go to Macau.
>> Anonymous
shenzen is not interesting IMHO. Depending on how much time you have in HK, i guess if you have more than 2 weeks, maybe you can take a day up there. Yes, hit up Macau, Vegas of the East can not be missed. Go to some of the outlying islands like lantau, they are nice and good seafood to be had.
What not to miss? Peak tram, ocean park, Mong Kok, causeway bay, take escalator at central, any huge mall, star ferry ride.

Yep, I'd go to Macau before considering Shenzen (been to both). Even if you don't care for gambling, it's good to see some of the old Portuguese colonial buildings, the tower, the whole 'feel' of the place is quite a lot different to Hong Kong too..

Oh do go see the Giant Buddha on top of Lantau (either by cable car from Tung Chung or bus from Mui Wo), DEFINITELY worth it. For meals, don't eat at hotels, seriously, there is nothing more stupid you can do than that. Hong Kong has some of the world's most brilliant restaurants. Check out Soho (on HK island) or Knutsford Terrace (in Tsim Sha Tsui) for a great selection of international restaurants that are priced very well. Best thing to do in Hong Kong though is definitely shopping. For tourist sites, see above, don't bother with Disneyland, seriously... It's the worst of the lot and always packed.

i agree with>>73957on not going to disneyland, its a waste of a day and it is seriously crowded by people mostly from mainland china.

>>73989DONT GET LOST, if possible, take the MTR (subway) to get around, buses can get quite confusing unless you have the trip all planned out since they dont go in straight lines and turn a lot.

I think getting lost (i.e wandering around planless) could be nice. Those are the times when you discover strange shops and mysterious houses.

get lost in sham shui po and mong kok then

HK is great. Lived here for about three months.

If you're into hiking or anything, there are plenty of great trails on HK island and Lantau Island. I recommend doing the peak trail starting out. It's not real well marked- just looks like a road traveling away from the peak tram station with little to no traffic. It quickly turns into a small paved path and circles around for a few miles. Beautiful scenery.

Be sure to hit Causeway Bay when it is packed. Maybe take a trip to Ocean Park.

Ride the cable car.

Are there spiders and shit in HK's forests?
>> Anonymous
>>74951
the only forests HK has is the forest of buildings you can see in OP's picture.

Spot the crazy guy in sham sui po, he usually wonders around the street markets wearing god knows WHAT... layers and layers of multicoloured, old loon with anger management problems and is most likely gay too.

This is Hong Kong. Note the green shit everywhere.

>>74961

That's surprising. I always pictured Hong Kong like Coruscant, a sea of skyscrapers everywhere and maybe they'd charge you a dollar and a half to see the lone tree.

Its because the territory is so mountainous and is full of protected natural areas that the city needs to be built so densely.

Go to vicoria peak or something like that, I know it's in like every folder but still, if you're lucky like me and have no smog, you'll have one hell of a view over the city.

Vist Golden Shopping centre in Sham Shui Po (MTR exit D) for the two large IT/PC related shopping malls.

I second this notion, this place is just PACKED with stores that look just like the store beside it, you will most likely die if they had a fire inside but still worth the visit.

>>74961
Green shit is everywhere from a birdseye view but you won't be seeing any of it unless u go to the peak or the south side. No trees to be seen on the north side of HK island and southside of Kowloon.

Actually, if it is a good day, maybe you can just walk east-west on HK island along the tram rail. Then you'll experience the different neighbourhoods of HK.

"Actually, if it is a good day, maybe you can just walk east-west on HK island along the tram rail. Then you'll experience the different neighbourhoods of HK."

I do this twice per day, as a matter of fact. From Shui Kei Wan to to west side of Chai Wan and back. May on occasion take the MTR for the return but still a nice walk.

That should read "Wan Chai" ... dam typo

how long does that take? I've only walked from North Point to CWB and that was maybe 20 mins or so? I went back during July last time and it was blazing hot so I never got the chance to do a longer walk.

Another suggestion to OP is to walk from the MTR station of Mong Kok to Mong Kok East. You can do it from the pedestrian bridge. Go out the exit that leads to New Century (plaza?/mall?) and from the bridge, you will walk past "gold fish" street and other neighbourhoods there. I would eat the street eat if I didn't fear diarrhea.

Who had this image of pure urban jungle? There is actually quite a bit of greenery in Hong Kong.

I think only 1/3rd of Hong Kong is actually built over. The rest is mountain, forest, and brush.

Here is a picture I took while hiking on Lamma island near HK

here is a pic of me halfway up a mountain on HK island itself. I'm looking out into the Lamma channel. Lamma island has that powerplant with the three smoke stacks in the distance
