Alright so I want to travel the world and see what other cultures are like because I feel as if my life is meaningless just being stuck here in my stupid desert city in California. I want to get out and see the world and feel like I have truly been to the amazing sites before the time comes I have to leave this world.

However I am dirt poor, my mother has a job interview tomorrow, but it's not enough to travel. I do not have a job yet and I rather finish my senior year in High School. My brother works in a Sporting Goods store, pays well enough to get by. Anyways, the point is; traveling is expensive and I need tips if I want to see the world.

I have thought about the Military, but I just do not want to risk the chance of dying. Expressibly with a war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am not religious so I cannot go on missionary missions. I'm stuck in this little dirt-hole known as the High Desert. Any suggestions?

Not to mention there is so much of my own backyard I haven't seen as well. The places I have been too are Las Vegas a couple of times and mostly around Southern California.

I think you need a college degree. I've had a bunch of teachers who did Peace Corps. and that shit is intense. They send you where you're needed, not where you want to go. You receive meager stipends, although in the countries they send you, even $200/month is enough for everything you need.

Consider the military for non-combat duty. Technician, mechanic, cook, janitor w/e. I'm pretty sure you'll get your enlistment bonus if its a non-combat job.
Or go to college, get your degree and then do one those "teach English in ____" programs where you travel on someone else's $$.

Well which degree?

Teaching English as a foreign language often requires no degree (But classes to make sure you've got everything right).

Judging from OP's grasp of English though, I don't think he qualifies.

Not sure about other programs but if Japan fits your fancy then the JET program only requires that it be any Bachelors degree. There's already a JET thread in /trv/:

dude, it's pretty easy. finish high school. I'm guessing your grades are shit so go to community college for a year and get straight As or as close as you can to it. Then transfer to a 4-year college. Do a year there keep your grades above a B. Then do an exchange program for a semester or a year.
If you don't have a lot of money the government helps to pay for your school and when you study abroad you pay your school and they pay the school in the other country you are going to. So basically the government is helping you go to another country. Also, the classes there will be transfer credit so they won't count on your GPA so you can relax more and take an academic breather.
Then you come back, finish the last year, and bam you find yourself a job in a country that speaks the language of the country you went to. The reason there aren't more americans outside america is because they don't want to leave so companies are pretty happy when they find someone they can send overseas.

fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. They take your parent's info on what they make and see if they can help you with really cheap loans.
I know getting into debt might seem like a bad idea but you have to think of it as an investment like stocks or buying a house except here your rate of return is several times better.

wow, how ironical. The only thing on my mind right now is visiting my girlfriend living in some desert town in California. I`ve got the same feeling by the way about living in some tiny town in the middle of nothing in Holland. If you want to get out of there and experience something, I`d reccomend hitchhiking. I`m planning on going (I dont know yet, somewhere) next summervacation.
