Awesome choice, I've always wanted to see Iceland, but never got a chance. Landmannalauger is often overlooked. Thingvellir and Gullfoss are cool too.

I live in Iceland. One word of advice, bring enough money. Everything here is fucking expensive.

yeah that's what i've heard
3 months to save up!
do you know if it's difficult for foreigners to rent a car/how are public transports?

Public transport is crap, the bus system is kind of confusing and inefficient, and taxis are expensive. However, it is very easy to rent a car as long as you have a valid drivers license. I showed a foreigner from Australia around a couple years ago and all he had to do was go to the car rental office at the airport and show his license, took about 15 minutes tops. If you are going to go around the country a lot to see the sights, I would definitely recommend renting a car. If you are just going to go to Gullfoss and Geysir, the main sights, you should be able to get on a one day coach tour for not too much money. As for while you are in Reykjavik itself, most places downtown are within walking distance. Wouldn't recommend renting a car unless you plan on getting out of the city much since parking spaces are pretty scarce these days downtown.

thx for the info,
basically we will definitely need a car, we plan on staying 10-15 days (is it long enough to get a good feel of the country?)

10-15 days should be enough, leaning towards 15 days if you are going to be traveling around a lot though. Do you have any plans for what you want to go see and such?

Mid July until early August is probably the best time to travel around, since the winter can get rather cold, although not as cold as many people would expect from the name. July-August is the warmest time of the year however, a rather pleasant 15-20°C is about the norm, although it can get a bit hotter on occasions.

Since you are going to rent a car, I would try to get a model which doesn't use up a lot of gas, since gas prices here are pretty much ridiculous right now. The liter is about 150KR, which translates to just over two dollars per liter. Diesel costs a little bit more, last time I checked it was 157KR per liter.

we still have to look precisely into it(got the idea this week) but we are suckers for landscapes...so i guess we'll go just about everywhere we can go! (amateur photograph here)
gas seems twice as expensive as it is here...we'll have to go easy on the pedal...

i'll try to post an itinerary on here (if the board survives) so if youre around feel free to comment (you or anyone whos ever benn there)
anywho thx again anon
