First of all, if you want to get around you need some transportation. There is this Europe railpass which should offer the best balance of costs and mobility. Check the routes where the trains are departing and you will already have a rough sketch of your itinerary. Well, there is a lot to see in Europe, you wont be able to cover every state on your stay here, so agree with your friend on a roundtrip and the specific countries. For example France - Netherlands - Germany - Switzerland - France. The only thing left to do now, is go to a book store and buy some travel guides. Read them and you will know what the countries and their cities offer you, if it's worthwhile to check out the countryside, see some nature and so on.
