You don't need it, get one when you get there. Learn the main streets from Lonely Planet or something. Honestly, you do not need it.

they're just to pinpoint where a detail is on any given map page

if you want to tell someone looking at the page where the post office is, or the nearest main intersection, you tell em to look at F2 or J10, say

Melways isn't two years out of date like Google Maps is.
Also, Google Maps seems to be based on the Gregory's street directories, which are notoriously inaccurate and outdated.
