What does /trv/ think of New York? I am a New Yorker and I'm curious to know how the rest of the country (and world) views my city. Personally, I can't stand it when I'm walking down the street and some idiot family of eight from Iowa takes up the whole goddamn sidewalk. The phrase "I'm walking here!" is never more topical...
>> Anonymous
I like New York. I was there for a wedding many years ago, and i have pleasant memories of the city.
>> Anonymous
From a Southerner's point of view...
New York = harsh, nasal voices; everybody walking really close together; hot dog vendors everywhere; skinny blond bimbos carrying little dogs in expensive purses; hordes of people in business suits; cabs everywhere; no sweet tea (therefore no souls); fear of getting mugged/raped

While I recognize that some of these aren't exactly reasonable, if I went to the city they would still probably affect my behavior.

Its ok. Its crowded and expensive. Just more so then any other downtown area. The natives move briskly to point a to b and move the fuck out of my way like anyone else walking in a crowded city.

Traffic is fucking surreal, parking is even worst.

i like new york, mostly. visit often enough. not sure i'd want to live there, but at least there's always something to do.

New Jerseyfag here, I liked New York the few times I've visited for misc. reasons. I do love Central Park though and just walking around the city in general is pretty nice.

The only reason people think New York citizens are horrible is because they go there, like OP said, and treat it like it's their house. When I'm walking, I move out of someone's way on instinct, I don't wait for people to get out of my way. And I don't flip out at people randomly either.

I think a New Yorker would either love me or hate me.

New York is fucking amazing. Best years of my life were spent in some Brooklyn shithole sharing three other guys.

LA/OC fag here. New Yorkers are definitely less friendly than Socal people, but you guys aren't self-centered, venomspitting back stabbers, which makes you ten times better in my book. The city itself is probably the most historical spot in all of America; everything important happened on the East coast and most of that was in New York. The train/subway system is pretty awesome, though I couldn't imagine living without a car. Downsides... It's cold as shit there during the winter, Socal has you fellas beat in climate. Food is different, but generally onpar in my opinion. That's about it, I believe.
>> Anonymous
new yorkfag here. you really don't need a car in the city, in fact it's pretty dumb to have one even if you can afford it. between the subway and cabs and your legs you can get around way better than if you had to park.

the other thing about new york is the different areas are totally different. lower east side is different from union square is different from midtown, all of which are drastically different from harlem or the bronx, and brooklyn has a bunch of totally distinct areas as well. there is a huge amount of geography, culture etc. in a very condensed area

Parisianfag here

When I compare Paris to NY,NY is fucking friendly.
Sure, people are busy but when we asked for a direction we always had a kind answer.

Traffic is not diffcult compared to old european cities,it's always straight and you can't get lost in a tiny street.Motherfucking cheap taxis everywhere in NY also!

Most of all,for a foreinger,it maybe a cliche but you don't feel a like a stranger in this city.People are not afraid when you have a strong foreign accent.

In paris,even if you have a slight accent,people will remind you that you are not a true french and you will never be truly accepted ;_;

So, NY FUCK YEAH!

Shit food. Absolutely no idea about it. Seems to be only junk (maccas, kfc, vending machines, doughnuts) or high priced extortionate restaurant.

Too fucking crowded and noisy, even for a metropolis. Shit public transport.

Too up itself, even for a major centre.

I've been to both NYC and Boston several times, and I like Boston more. Everyone in New York is either a tourist or an asshole, even the wait staff in restaurants is shit. Boston has more character and nicer people.

Before 2001 I had the view that New York was truly the city where the most enlightened, radical and exciting people lived. After 2001 I've been struggling to rid my mind of the idea that it's all flag waving patriots. I'm sure that's not true though.

NY is surprisingly clean.
And Queens is surprisingly not that bad either. I drove through it at night, and honestly, I'd be more afraid in Oakland.
Delicious food and people in smart looking suits. I like it.

NYC is probably the best City I've been too. But NYC is one of those cities that to really get a feel for it and know the good palces you cannot be a tourist. You hvae to be from NJ/NY and go there often to get a feel for the shit that's worth seing and doing.

All teh big tourist stuff in NYC? Bullshit and not worth it. The good shit are the little known areas within the city.

Probably he best bar I've ever been to (and I hit the pubs in Ireland) is this hidden bar near the Empire State Building, way up in a hotel.

Fuck you if you think I am telling you where it is though.

I'm another Southerner,>>3065is half-right about your tea. My cousins live in New York, was there for thanksgiving, asked for a tea in a vietnamese restaurant and had awesome results.
In my part of the country, cities in general are viewed as too materialistic and fast-paced, but New Yorkers are viewed with a great deal of sympathy because of 9/11.

>>3783

Depends. NY is lousy with Brits, you can't walk three blocks without hearing a British accent. Also, the city is fairly patient with people who don't speak english, if that's a problem.

I've probably only heard one Brit ever in NY. And I've been there many times being from NJ.

I'm in Manhattan, Stuyvesant Town to be exact. Though an expensive gayfest it's a fairly nice. I really wouldn't mind moving to a quieter city. Personally I'm fairly bored of the NYC, tourists would appreciate the place more but when you've lived here 20+ years it's not really all that amazing.

i've been a tourist from iowa in new york. that is because I am from iowa. the thing is, people from new york go on and on about how awesome it is, and then get pissed that people want to go there, but then they go other places and act just like the asshole tourists they claim to despise. having finally visited NYC in my late 20's I was able to understand that all the hype was just that, and that 99% of new yorkers are fat fucking yankees just like the rest of us that shop at target and watch too much TV. New York, sure, it's OK. It's no Dublin or Moscow or Tokyo - yes, I've been - it's. just. OK. And it's not fucking yours.
>> anonymous of athens !SysNpnp3nU
I've been a tourist two times to new york, it's a nice place. I think the reputation for being assholes is somewhat warranted but by and large Americans are pretty friendly people.

lol you and the beantown fags are just butthurt about the yankees.

nyc haters are funny.

new york varies wildly by neighborhood. madison avenue in the 60s is all well dressed rich people shopping for cartier, the south bronx is a place where you get your tires stolen if you stop at a red light. both are in nyc. technically.

la is hardly a city.

its a big smog sprawl, filled with people who couldn't hack it in nyc. or hollywood fags, they almost more hated than new yorkers.

this whole ny/la talk discounts the whole middle of the country, it's not nice.

ps as far as california cities go i'd take san francisco over la by a hundred times.

San Fran is nice, but the Bay Area sucks, I say that living there, it's bad.
>> Anonymous
I'm from upstate and visited the city 4 years ago for the first time, and thought it sucked. Too big, too dirty, too full of assholes, and everywhere you go you're immediately considered a criminal (especially in Tower Records). And fuck the lying restaurant owners in Little Italy who stand on the street not shutting up with their attempts to get you to eat their extremely shitty food. Plus I missed nature. The only good thing that happened was some teenage whores tried giving my buddy a handjob on the subway.

And yeah, the groups of tourists who stand in the middle of the sidewalk royally sucked.

Basically, the city isn't all that it's hyped up to be but it's not the worst place I've ever been, either. I don't understand why it's treated as the best place on earth.

Never been to NY, never had the desire to go (passed up an opportunity just last semester). Based on my experience with Chicago, I'm not a huge fan of big cities. Too expensive, too 'tourist-y', too many people thinking themselves superior purely off the basis of where they live.

Not that Iowa is any better...

Canadafag here. I was only there for a weekend, got to do all the tourist shit... People are much nicer than Borat would have you believe, Central Park is nice, the city itself is very open and multicultural, the tourist traps did not dissapoint and the best Hot Dog I've ever is there. FUCK YEAH NATHAN'S!

A bit pricy and a bit over-patriotic, bordering on facism, as a Norwegian tourist said.

So, yeah, I'd like to go there with some buddies sometime.

I'm from upstate. I visited NYC once when I was a kid. It's boring, overcrowded, utilitarian and ugly throughout. I don't understand the appeal to tourists. I've lived approximately an hour and a half away my entire life and I've never had any desire to return.
