General Rule of Thumb = If it's a great place to visit, it's a terrible place to live.

Does this remain true with Hawaii? All I know about it is the cost of living's high.

The cost of living in Hawaii is astonishingly high because of course they have to ship in pretty much everything. Bread cost over $3 a loaf... in the 1980s.
The natives have been pushed aside as they have been elsewhere.
Waikiki is so over-developed it resembles downtown Manhattan more than a tropical paradise; hotels actually build out into the surf in some places, to make room for their swimming pools; beaches are almost non-existant.
If you are a white American, you will be very-much in the ethnic minority in Hawaii. The place is full of--and mostly owned by-- Japanese.
Get away from the toustisty area of the Islands, though, and the old charm can still be found, but's it's disappearing at a predictable velocity. The weather is absurdly nice--the rain at times is downright polite-- and most-all the locals away from the high-dollar tourtist hives have succumed to the care-free, laid-back sensibility that living in such a clime naturally induces.

Hawaii anon here. If you can afford it and don't mind commuting/traffic, it can be a great place to live.

Pros:
-the weather, absolutely gorgeous, no further explanation needed
-the food, if you're willing to try the local food and enjoy it you'll probably never want to stop eating it
-the women, nowhere else in the country can compete if you like asian chicks

The Cons:
-traffic, I lived in a suburban town in central Oahu and had to commute to work/school everyday, usually took me an hour or so in rush hour traffic. also, people are in general horrible drivers, which is a big reason for the traffic
-limited opportunities for entertainment, you're on an island, so there's only so much to do. however, if you enjoy just relaxing in the sun and don't give a shit about having something new and exciting to do every weekend for the rest of your life, you'll be fine
