I'm taking a year off before college and I want to travel across the country (US). I want to see and experience new things. What do people DO on cross-country trips, exactly, besides sightseeing? What's the best way to do this cheaply? I'd be willing to work, of course. No hitchhiking plz.

Why would you want to do that? I wouldn't be caught dead is most of the south/central states. Go to Europe instead; would be cheaper, as well as way more fun and enjoyable.

Cheaper, really? Even taking into account plane tickets?

i would take>>56310with a pinch of salt. with the dollar as it is now, and given that in europe you would be going to touristy areas, i would say compared to america it would be far from cheap. when my sister came back from america i couldnt -believe- how cheap she said it was compared to britain, disregarding the exchange rate to GBP as well. so that may come as a shock if you do come to europe.

as for what you would do, the experience of going places you've never been before, seeing things you wouldn't have seen, preferably with your best friends, would be pretty great, wherever you went (within reason..).

The problem is, I'd be traveling alone. Although I still think I'd like being somewhere I'd never been before, I can foresee myself being extremely lonely.

Are there maybe volunteer programs in different cities I should look into that offer room and board?

i just got back from 2 months in Spain (mostly) and the rest of europe and let me tell you, europe is NOT cheap right now, unless you go to eastern europe.

Also re: OP's image - don't skip out on the Pacific Northwest, its the most beautiful section of the country. Check out Olympic Nat'l park, the oregon coast, the cascades, the rockies in idaho, hells canyon, McCall lake, Glacier Natl park and montana around butte and bozeman, and of course, yellowstone

Some nice stops on the map, I see, but stopping in San Diego is a good idea (the weather alone makes up for the rest of So. Cal). How long are you planning to do this for? Do you have a time limit?
