Boston's a great city, but not exactly a cheap one (though you could probably find something decently cheap). Still, there's a lot to do in and around the city. Lots of museums, parks, historical places, etc. Good mass transit, too (though remember, the T isn't like the NY Subway, it's not 24/7. The last trains are around 12:30).
A good thing about Boston is that it's actually quite small in terms of land area. You can walk most of the parts you'd actually want to visit without too much trouble. Don't think about driving in the city, though. Aside from being crowded, the streets are basically just slightly widened, somewhat paved 17th century cow & horse paths.
