So /trv/, I'm trying to get accepted to do a work exchange program on St. John in the Caribbean this summer (pic deliciously related). It's an amazing ecotourism resort called Maho Bay Camps, and if accepted I'll stay the entire month of June and work ~6 hours a day, 5 days a week with 2 days off every week and half off food expenses. Well worth it to spend 30 days in this paradise, I think.

Lucky bastard.

Thanks, but I have to get accepted first... ;_; But I think I'm a pretty cool chick, I'll climb the 500+ stairs and doesn't afraid of anything. What kind of odds does a smart and resourceful 19 y/o with some relevant job experience have out of 1000 applicants?

How do work exchange programs work?

As it's a tourist resort, you better hope you're at least moderately good looking.

They're all different, but in this one the summer is "off season" so they need people to keep everything in good shape for the cooler months. They provide free housing in this gorgeous Caribbean paradise and half off food there for a month, and in exchange you work 5 days a week, 6 hours a day... meaning you've got at least 3/4 of every single day to bask in sweet tropical sunshine or read a book in the shade of a palm tree, or curl up and take a nap while serenaded by the sounds of the forest.
Of course there are work exchange programs all over the world; you can go teach English in another country and stay with a host family. Just Google "international work exchange."

I'd rate myself as at least a 7 on a 1-10 scale, but seeing as it's ecotourism it shouldn't matter as much. Plus, the application doesn't require a picture anyway.

pics lol?

But seriously, I used to live on St. Thomas. St. John is just a ferry trip away, and I've been there several times. Its beautiful, and not many people are there. If you dislike large, red ants and other such insects, I suggest you don't go.

Also, if you're white, be prepared to be the minority for the first time in your life (except at your workplace, probably). I think its cool, but if you hate the negroids, don't go.

I've been to the resort; it's in the state park so it's not like your typical vacation destination- the whole thing is built to minimize ecosystem impact, so everything is raised above the ground and connected by boardwalks with hundreds of steps, you walk to the bathrooms which don't have hot water (although you hardly need it), and the cabins are reminiscent of a screened-in porch.
Yes, I'm white, but again because it's ecotourism the resort population is mostly white as well.

That place is built for rich white fucks. Yep. At least you can safely give those guys their tropical fantasies. There's really not much to do on St. John though, but I guess if you'll only have a few weekends, you'll have plenty to do, as long as you like beaches and hikes.

Really? 'Cause actually it's really cheap.

Wouldn't "rich white fucks" want to stay somewhere, you know, rich? With real floors and walls and ceilings, and swimming pools and easy beach access and tennis courts and a gym?

If the app requires no pic just play yourself up the best you can. What kind of work experience do you have that would help you help them?

You'll probably need to sleep too dummy

Wonder when it gets dark in there

Hahaha! But how can I sleep with so much beauty around me? Maybe I can set myself up a hammock somewhere on the far end of the bay... *dreams*
