Weekend in Osaka Anonymous
Heading to Osaka from the 20th to the 23rd. Staying near Umeda. Looking for inexpensive things to do, places to go and stuff to see. I've been to Tokyo several times, but I've never gone to Osaka.

Besides the aquarium, any suggestions

Depends on what your after:
Round 1 is always fun. Also close to Kobe so you've got variety. Probably worth egtting a railpass of somesort.

live and work in Japan, so can't go the japan rail pass route, if that's what you're suggesting.

Ride the ferris wheel, if you can get a date. It's just kind of cool, as gay as that sounds. Test out your Japanese, and try to catch a Manzai act. Only three days, which sucks...but try to see Kyoto. Its a cheap quick train ride.

make sure to check out "amemura" also in the namba area

if you like museums the museum of history is quite good. you won't be dissapointed with the aquarium; awesome stuff.

Ame-mura and Den-den town are to Osaka what Shibuya and Akihabara are to Tokyo. Except smaller.

I think you're going to be pretty disappointed. There's some local specialties but it's what Chicago is to New York. Amemura is pretty much Harajuuku x 1/8.

But on the bright side, food is noticeably cheaper. I'm sure there's endless great places that locals know about but if not just go to the Shinsaibashi area and the Kuidaore clown doll or crab place. Pretty good and cheap too.

Other than that, just walk around the miles of shotengai in the Umeda area. That in itself is time consuming enough.

There's a club called Pure that has all-you-can-drink for 3500 yen (2500 for ladies).

The best thing about Osaka is the food. There really aren't many touristy things to do after the aquarium and castle.

There are a few types of things you should eat.

1. Okonomiyaki (dotombori)
2. Takoyaki (dotombori)
3. Fried things on a stick (tsutenkaku)

If you can understand Japanese, visit the comedy club in Namba

That's expensive for a nomihodai. 2000 is decent for a 90 minute one.

yeah, depends on how long that gets you. there's places here in toyama that, time to time, have all night (8pm-whenever shit winds down, at 3 or 4 am) nomihodais for 3000 or something. that's good shit.

Shinsaibashi because it is hot as fuck

Unfortunately, the local train rail name translates to “golden rail” for a reason: it’s expensive. If you’re staying around the Ôsaka-Kobe-Kyoto area and aren’t riding more than four times a day, don’t waste your money on a rail pass.

Food, with the exception of beef, is very cheap, so load up. Expect a very nice dinner to run about ¥1000.

Hit up Club Pure. 3500 yen at the door, free drinks and good music all night from 10pm - 4am.
Probably the cheapest way to spend a night in Osaka really.

You're right. Not even the Jappos like saying the whole goddamned thing all the time. Their language is rife with Orwellian newspeak-type stuff like this. Trust me, its doubleplusgood!

I found the mossy buddha at Houzen-ji. Bought an omikuji and got daikichi, so that was cool.

my hotel was in a seedy part of town with all these 'free guide' places that had burly men outside and '18 years or older' curtains.
