Hello /trv/, any deutschFags here? I'm a white britFag moving to Stuttgart, Germany for a year. A few questions.

1) What do you think of the English? Will i be well recieved.
2) Anywhere worth visiting?
3) I can only speak English and French fluently, however i am trying to learn Deutsch as quickly as possible, any tips? Do many education institutes run courses at reasonable prices?
4) Any quirky customs i should know about?
5) Any other advice.

Germans like the English, except in Berlin, where they don't like anyone. The turks like Berlin though!

Many places teach German, it'll be fine. The cost of living in Germany is lower than the UK so you should be OK.

1) Yes, of course.
2) No, Stuttgart is a nice City.
3) I don't know exactly, but there should be courses at what we call "Volkshochschule" or VHS, to get some basic German-Skills. But don't worry nearly every German speaks at least a little bit English.
4) not that i know
5) Don't forget to visit all the nice places in southern germany (my favourites: Stuttgart itself of course, Munich, Ulm, Lake Constance ("Bodensee") thats where i live, Freiburg, Würzburg)

I see what you did there. I must say I'm not amused, though.

1. Yes and No. Yes, because most people think you are American and especially in Stuttgart they are used to Americans. No because your ancestors bombed Dresden and there are a lot of idiots who hate Britain for it. Also They don't like you because of football.

2. Stuttgart is nice for itself. Munich is just 1 1/2 hours away and also worth a visit as well as Frankfurt.

3. There are lots of places where you can learn German, because the government spends a lot of money to integrate foreigners and this includes learning German. Don't be suprised that 90% of your classmates will be either Turks or other Muslims.

4. Swabian is a pretty strong accent. Even most Germans don't understand it. So expect to hear funny things and proverbs.

5. Drink beer and eat sausage.
It sounds kind a silly, but German beer is the best in the world and German sausage is awesome as well.
Don't do any Nazistuff like shouting "SIEG HEIL!" or the Hitlergruß. Germans don't think it's funny at all and you will receive the beating of you life AND spend some time in jail.

Thankyou for the advice. Is there anything I can do to not appear American? I do have a strong English accent and dress smartly.

Also, is it possible for a non national to get a library card? I will have a fixed address and job.

The Germans are a disgusting group of people who oppress the Turkish minority, why would you want to live there?

uuuh, wear clothing with the union jack on them? if you talk to someone, just say that you're british. imo british are kinda popular in germany.

yes, I think so, just look for a younger assistant there, old ladies with glasses might not be able to speak english.

if you're into wine and beautiful countrysides, travel west to Karlsruhe and then to Saarbrücken or Trier.

Most Germans don't know the difference between British and American English.

turks are the niggers of germany, so its understandable. And we still treat you better than your own goverment does. If you dont like it, noone's forsing you to stay.

OP, youre gonna love it here. Only problem i forsee is that germans are as cold and emotionless as fish, but then again, i dunno if english arent like that either. And that is not a bad thing, IMO. Working with a german...iet is pretty good. And if you need some actuall feelings and shit, seek out the student comunity. They are way more open and frivolous compared to your genneral german.

Don't be silly. Most germans know the difference between American & British english and hopefully you do not look as the archtype of an american.

Depends on the library, but I think that you even won't need to show your address and stuff to get a library pass (you just have to pay a fee).

You should be thankful we scraped the make Germany a poor dependent agricultural nation with half of its present population plan.
