This is something I've also always wanted to do, although if I was driving I would go to to Thailand via Turkey and a couple of car ferries to avoid dangerous areas. I also want to do the Trans-Siberian to Vladivostok or Trans-Mongolian route down to Hong Kong.
There's a lot to consider, even things like having a left-hand or right-hand drive vehicle. You need something big that will survive on low grade petrol or diesel and can also carry spare fuel, tyres and other spares. Ideally you want a vehicle that's already been prepared for such an expedition (pictured), but they're not cheap (although hold their value well). You've also got to get all your papers in order, which isn't always easy or cheap. There's a lot of research to do too, even down to knowing about Police bribes. I think with a decent vehicle, you'll be talking £20,000+, obviously if you can split that with people it's better, but the more people, the harder it'll be to accommodate them all.
