Should I go to Brazil or Argentina? I speak some spanish and could easily expand my vocabulary, but I speak no Portuguese. I could learn it, but I'd probably spend a lot of time just learning the basics of grammar and pronunciation.

I'd prefer to go to Brazil, and go to Rio Grande do Norte from Rio de Janeiro and possibly see the Amazon and the Rain Forest if it's not a bitch, but that's not what I want to go for. I'd probably spend a few days in Rio de Janeiro on arrival and a few days prior to departure.

If I went to Argentina I don't know what I'd do, but I have several months to figure shit out.

I'll be in either one for the month of July. As far as I understand, the price of food is relatively expensive, but about the same as it is in America, but lodging is fucking cheap in both countries. I'm up for absorbing culture, but I'll do that at my own pace, and I don't want to mingle with other tourists.

Other factors:
Politeness, cleanliness, crime, quality of food, how many other tourists will be there

All help is greatly appreciated

The question is: why are you coming to Brazil? What are you planning to do here in South America?

>As far as I understand, the price of food is relatively expensive
False. Food in Brazil is very cheap and extremelly good. Lodgings are indeed also cheap.

Argenfag here.

Living expenses are fucking cheap (even food), specially when taken into account the Dollar's value.

You have many kind of places to travel here, from Urban places to natural stuff, etc, etc.

Don't know about Brazil, though, so you'll have to find yourself another one to answer about it.

There ARE many things for tourist to do here, specially if you enjoy the nightlife.

One sure pro I DO know from Brazil is that it's as easy as breathing to get laid (though you'll have to be fucking carefull if you don't want to end up winning the AIDS game, but, then again, that's a risk wherever you go).

I figured it would be a cheap place to vacation at and that it would be fun. I guess I won't spend more than 2 weeks around the beach, but that's primarily why I'm going. Pretty girls, nice weather, and hopefully out of the way of the main tourist circuit, although I fear I'll be leaving when most tourists go anyway. I don't want to live up to the stereotype of an American, and I also don't want to be embarassed by other Americans.

And as>>13361pointed out, getting laid there would be nice. The whole thing that sparked this idea was meeting some Brazilians and Argentinians on a train ride to Portland Oregon. I was amazed by how they looked 2-4 years younger than they were (except paradoxically, the youngest argentinian girl, who was 18 and looked 28).

IIRC, I was told Rio de Janeiro can be a dangerous place, especially for whities.

If you can reccomend better places in Brazil, I'll go there instead.

Rio de Janeiro is dangerous, but only if you go alone dressed like a rich white tourist into the favelas. Then they wonder "OH WHY I GET ROB? ;_;"
pahlease. Stick around with a good guide or contacts there and you will be fine. Don't stay around after 11:30pm to 4:00pm, that is statistically the peak time when murders occur. Usually at bars or localities where alcohol is involved. Makes sense tho.

Besides that Rio de Janeiro is a beautiful city with beautiful women and beautiful weather. It's not the cidade marvilhosa for nothin!

Argentinafag here...
I have a novel idea for you: Go to the Iguazu Falls.

The Iguazu Falls are fucking amazing, and are located right on the border between Argentina and Brazil. You can visit the falls from both countries, and see the national parks on each side of the border. Hotels there are quite cheap, and from there you can head either south to visit the rest of Argentina, or north to visit the rest of Brazil. (Maybe depending on whether you make Brazilian or Argentine friendships?)

The falls can be seen from both sides, from my experience the Argentine side brings you closer to the falls to the point that you actually get wet, while the Brazilian side has a better panoramic view, but not so much closeness.

Argentina is definately cheaper, btw. I went on vacations to Brazil last January, and everything costed much more than last year. This is because the Brazilian real has gained strenght against the dollar, while the Argentine peso has stayed the same.

In any case, both countries are fucking beautiful, and you'll have a great time. In Brazil I would stay the fuck away from Sao Paulo, though.

Well, my mom was robbed in Rio as soon as she walked 4-blocks away from the touristy beach area.

It's not a safe city. You have to stay as close as possible to the beach/hotel area, the idea of walking around the city or taking the bus on your own is impossible for a foreigner.

If you want beach, go to Brazil.
If you want nightlife, go to Argentina.

If you want to have a good time, go to Brazil.
If you want to meet arrogant people, go to Argentina. Or somewhere in Rio Grande do Sul, the cesspit of Brazil. Maybe because it's near Argentina.

"Brasil o mais grande do mundo"...ring a bell, hypocrite? At least we don't claim to have invented the airplane!

Seriously, both countries are very nice. If you can afford it, visit the main cities of both, it will be a much more fun and interesting experience that sticking with just one.

Brazilfag here.

If you want a good time, come to Brazil.
Personally I dislike most of what people would recommend (such as beaches, Corcovado, Pão de Açúcar and all that shit), but for tourism, I guess it would be pretty darn nice.

I don't know much about Argentina, but according to a friend of mine, it's also a marvelous country to spend some days in.

go to Argentine they have way cooler dictators and their economy is not dependent on the value of dollar and iron ore export prices

Well, if you want cleanliness, low crime, and good food, then Argentina surely beats Brazil. The steak they have there is something out of this world.

If you go to a hostel or something like that, you are guaranteed to meet tourists, no matter the country.

If you are more adventurous, Brazil is a great destination, though, specially the beaches around Buzios, Bahia or Niteroi in Rio, which are always packed with foreign tourists.
