/trv/, I'm tired of living where I'm at now (small town near Atlanta), and I've decided that tomorrow morning I'm going to leave. I'm 19. I have about 7 grand saved up from when I was living at home and managing a GameStop to last me until I find a job wherever I decide to go. I'm leaning toward New York City, or New Jersey close to NYC. I've also considered Memphis, New Orleans, and LA. Any thoughts?

Are people from Georgia friendly?

Pretty friendly, yeah. Customers at the Gamestops I worked at were almost always understanding and nice.

NYC is not for you unless you can afford $3500 for decent rent. LA, I shouldnt even have to comment on. Do your research.

If you want a decent city to start out in i'd suggest looking north-east, or north-west.

OP, stay the fuck away from every one of those places you mentioned. Don't come to Nashville either, as it's not that terrible of a place but the job market blows.

$3500/month if you want to live in Manhattan. If you're OK with an outer boro, then you can go by with $1200/month. Or less depending on how brave you are and how close you want to be to Manhattan.

Dallas/Ft. Worth would be a pretty sound choice. It's one of the few areas that's virtually unaffected by the credit crisis and the cost of living is stupid cheap. While that seven grand will last you 2-3 months in the majority of the places you listed, it'll easily stretch across 5-6 in DFW. However, unlike Seattle, you'll need a car to travel anywhere in north Texas. Public transport is pretty pathetic.

If you can find a roommate and don't mind living in Brooklyn, Queens, or the Bronx with potentially crazy people or inhabiting a tiny tiny room with no windows, you can live for 500 something in rent a month, in a place not too far from the subway. If you're willing to live way up in Harlem or Inwood you can find similar prices.

Your life will be terrible and soul crushing as you work your menial job, but you can do it for like a year. Might be fun.

You'd only be able to afford rent in a black neighborhood in NYC, but you're from Georgia so you'll be right at home
