Going to visit Japan, with two friends, in august for 26 days. I know it's not the most pleasant time to visit this country but there really is no other option.

In first two weeks we are planning to mostly stay in Kansai region, arriving in Nagoya then going to spend a few days in Kyoto, from there going to visit Osaka, maybe Nara and as it seems definitely Koyasan.

That's the plan for first two weeks of my first visit in Japan, what do you think /trv/?

I didn't really go in details here, but would be very interested to hear some advice and recommendations from you /trv/ - what to see/visit while in Kansai region.

Get a "JR Pass",

2 weeks is like 400

3 is like 550
It literally changes day to day depending on the exhange even though you can ONLY buy it outside Japan.

Anyway, it'll let you travel on all JR lines (Which is about 90% of them on Honshu).

http://www.kintetsu.com/jrpass/?gclid=CIX678iGs5QCFQyfnAodSTKYTQ
has some details

I got mine from some travel group in Atlanta before I went. Put about $3000 in Shinkansen travel on that thing.

It'll let you make day-trips out to Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Fuji, Yokhohama, Chiba, Tokyo from as far south as Osaka. From Nagoya you might even be able to make it up to Sendai or further if you catch the first train to Tokyo and immediately transfer up the rest of the way.

You can't take the express but you can ride the mid shinkansen which stops at one to two thirds the stops of the really slow all-locals shinkansen.

As for Kansai, don't make Nara a maybe. It's probably the most touristy of touristy places you'll end up but it's touristy for everybody, foreigners and Japanese alike so you won't really stand out as a, quote, "tourist".

also, don't miss comiket, even if you're a normalfag and only go to geek-watch and see the cosplay (which includes loli cosplay)

I lived in Osaka for a year. I'm prepared to answer any and all questions about the area, I just need to know what specifically you want to see. Also, if you want tips on making the eating part of it cheap, ask. Finally, do you speak any moon?

I recommend Wakayama Prefecture. :D The beach there is really cool (rocky beaches but I've never been to one before so the scenery was really nice and fresh) and there are amazing onsens there. If you like seafood, Wakayama has amaaaaazing food (maguro don! whale lol if you're adventurous).

I went down to Kii-Katsuura station for onsen + food and it was amazing. Shirahama is also a big onsen + beach town and is a bit closer than Kii-Katsuura (but it doesn't have the cave onsen that Kii-Katsuura has).

If you like nature-y places, Minoo (Osaka) and Mt. Rokko (Kobe) are nice. :) The night view of Kobe from Mt. Rokko is really famous and Minoo has a lot of monkeys.

If you're into shrines and stuff, Nishinomiya Shrine in Nishinomiya City is the head shrine of the Ebisu shrines. It has quite a lot of history to it too.

Was away from the internet for a few days and I'm delighted that thread isn't yet dead.

Thanks /trv/ for some great tips!

Regards JR Pass, as far as we have looked into it and calculated our expenses on traveling with or without it we almost got even, so decided not to take it so we could ride any line without stress. I might be wrong though.
Writing down Nara in our traveling schedule, thanks.

When and where is Comiket?

Regards moonspeak, took lessons for half and a year and would consider myself as an advanced beginner. Nothing big and wouldn't consider it as able to speak.
Tips on eating would be really appreciated!

nara should be your first day trip choice but if you have an extra day around kyoto or osaka go to himeji. the castle is awesome.

uji is good too but there's not that much there. it's only about 20mins from kyoto and famous for having the temple on the back of the 10 yen coin though.
