amerifag here.. hello everyone.

traveling abroad to europe (not the uk, been there and have heard the whispers of "septic" floating around) and i was wondering if i could ask a question without this turning into a flame debate.. yes, this is going to be tough. sometimes just asking this question gets people off in a screaming debate.

i'll be visiting the major countries of course: germany, france, italy, maybe norway, etc. and some minor ones.. winland, etc.

my question is.. is there anything i should know about when visiting europe that you see time and time again? like certain things tourists should not do (not specifically americans, though i'm sure this thread will turn to that) besides the obvious (piss in the street, kick an old lady in the chest, etc)?

i'd just like to make my visit a nice one as well as any locals i might run into on my way through.

ps, i was thinking about wearing my favorite t-shirt on the first day in each country.

actually, in france it's rude to NOT kick old ladies in the chest

France is awesome.
>> ?????????????????

In most countries when you put your index finger and thumb together to form a circle, that's saying something is ok, but in France, it means "you're worth nothing".

Dont use your creditcard to tip because most places the resturant just pockets it and the staff see diddly squat. also dont complain about the food/service we know its crap but... well just trust me.

i love how people take these problems to 4chan when there are uncountable numbers of travel websites answering these very questions very capably. go to one of them and leave this place far behind..

well, this is /trv/.. might as well ask if you're bored =|

I've always wanted that t-shirt.

4chan gives advice that other places wont like:
>don't visit <insert city> because a bunch of subhuman Turks live there
>watch out for the niggers at <insert city>

This is why I use /trv/ over a fucking travel agent.

If you are going to Germany, don't just go to Munich, consider Hamburg, Berlin, etc.

Don't expect that a waiter will show up at your table every ten seconds.

Also visit the Eagle's Nest.

ha, that doesn't even happen here.

DO NOT ADMIT YOUR NATIONALITY

For the duration of your holiday you are Canadian unless legal reasons preclude you saying so.

It also means to go fuck yourself in Brazil.

Learn at least some of the local language. While a lot of people speak good English they'll find it endearing and'll be more willing to help you.

Don't come to Europe there is a eh .......... cheese shortage we can't accomadate any moar Amerifags, also if you pack 4 suitcases and come anyway don't speak in public your accent will annoy all around you, also buy a map so you don't need to bother people with stupid as questions such as where is Hamburg or Nice staines etc

He means that in the US, you automatically you get the bill, but in Europe, we think it's rude when they shove it in your face, so you're going to have to ask for it.

Another tip: in France, tell them you're Canadian, so they can't go all anti-America on your ass.
>> Anonymous
saying sorry a lot will probably help.
>> Anonymous
>>35102
This is key. They're not actually anti-American for the most part, they're anti-STEREOTYPICAL American.

Especially in France, TRY to speak their language first, ask them in French if they speak English ("Parlez-vous anglais?") Make an effort in their language, instead of defaulting to English and forcing them to speak it. Show that you're willing to try to communicate in French, but that English would be much easier for you.

you forgot all the moroccans in <insert city>

>we think it's rude when they shove it in your face, so you're going to have to ask for it.

uh, i don't what restaurants you visited in america.. but the majority i visit, you ask for the check unless you're alone. common policy from waiters/waitresses - don't rush people who are WITH people.

>>35112
even when you're alone or w/ ppl and they happen to hand it to you.. they say "whenever you're ready" and only come back when the booklet is at the edge of the table. they don't shove it in your face.. that's a bit dramatic.

>Make an effort in their language
i will. i did the same when i visited south america.

REMEMBER, TELL EVERYONE YOU'RE CANADIAN.
>> Anonymous
>>35129
lol, no. i won't.
>> Anonymous
>>35129
Don't do this. Especially not in France, because then some people might want to talk to you about the Seperatist movement.
>> Anonymous
>>35141

Lol, the "movement". The Quebecois feel that their ethnic background makes them special, which is rather hilarious considering that most Frenchman look at them as "inbred dirty trapper-folk".

>>35135

k then remember to make lots of social faux pas, judge the country's food as beneath you, pass snide imperialist judgement and ultimately get drugged, raped, and left for dead in the streets of a foreign country
