This is as good a place as any to ask this I guess:

I've been wondering for the longest time-
When people first discover remote societies (like Japan, the Native American indians, Aztecs, etc.) how do they exchange languages? I mean obviously there are interpreters now, but how did it all start? How does one go about learning a language that no one has ever spoken before other than the native speakers of that language?
