I'm not a regular here but I wanted to ask a few questions about Japan. I'm planning to visit Tokyo for a week or two in November and I need to know a few things.

a) I know that Japanese people are generally very respectful but are there any problems with racism at all? I'm white (British to be specific) and I'd prefer not to be on the receiving end of it but I'm willing to deal with it if there's very little.

b) How much would my trip cost? I'm going to visit some travel agents today to get quotes on hotels and flights but I'm talking about the day-to-day cost of living there. Say I'd like to be able to eat properly, nothing special though, and I'd like to be able to buy some souvenirs of my trip, also I'd like to do some sightseeing so consider the prices of some sightseeing tours, regular transportation around the city, etc.

c) As a continuation of the last note, please recommend some places in and around Tokyo that are worth visiting/seeing.

d) I know absolutely no Japanese. How well will my English serve me there?

e) Finally, what are my chances of meeting hot Japanese girls who will be interested in me? I'm not one for believing in stereotypes but I'm told that they like white guys, and I'm tall. I'm not ugly, I don't struggle with confidence around females or anything like that so just take into account that I'm a pretty normal guy.

Thanks /trv/

I posted in your thread over in /jp/

a) They will be kind to you and serve you, but deep down they will hate you

b) Umm..it's expensive, but what that means is it's exactly like living at home. You'll pay the same price for everything there. But there's still decent places to eat for cheapish. Just look around
c) Tokyo Tower is for the lolz. Akiba for the Otaku and to see how messed up the culture is. I don't remember where else I went in tokyo
d) Not well. Just point at shit, they'll understand
e) No idea. I have a girlfriend

e) liar enjoy your hand

a) Japanese people are too polite, old people don't like europeans but it's really no problem.
b) The prices are almost the same as in London
c) I can't remember any wapanese names but the whole city is awesome
d) Most people speak a little bit english
e) Japanese girls are very shy, I haven't tried but it should be possible

a) I've been there twice and I didn't notice any racism. Then again I was too busy spending my savings in record stores. BTW I'm from Scandinavia.

b) Ho(s)tel + 30e per day and you'll be fine. I had a budget of a 50e(25e on a business hostel) per day. You really don't even need to compare prices when eating with that budget. A curry meal at Cocos ichibanya(or at any other "fast food chain" for that matter) will cost you around 3-6e. Remember this Tokyo has everything for you budget if you are willing to spend some time looking. Then again if you're lazy you'll just end up spending 20e for a cup of coffee at some "hip" place in Ginza. If you plan on buying some new gadgets(trust me you will) then you'll need more money to the budget.

c) www.tokyogigguide.com has concert listings for Tokyo. The Tokyo metropolitan government building > Tokyo tower because you'll get higher and it's free. Akihabara is a must if you like games/technology/etc. Shibuya has tons of record stores and you can walk from there to Harajuku to see some cosplayers(on Sundays). If you like museums then the Miraikan on Odaiba (The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) is the place for you. Kabukicho is the red-light district of Tokyo if that floats your boat but there are also clubs that have concerts and other non-sex-related activities.
www.japan-guide.com & wikitravel have tons of info on what to do Tokyo.

d) You can get by with just English but it will be somewhat difficult. For Example the sales people at Tower records in Shibuya spoke only a little English last time I was there. On my first trip I didn't speak Japanese at all but still managed to buy night bus tickets, reserve hotel rooms etc. You'll manage, just speak slowly and use hand gestures.

e) Don't know because I mostly spent my time with other gaijins.

a) They don't give a fuck unless you want to stay forever. Why are /trv/ posters such pussies about "racism" anyway? Boo fucking hoo that yellow person looked at you funny. you'll never see him again ever.
b) Sleeping is expensive, eating and transport are so-so.
c) Touristy places, duh. Mori Tower is nice for a view of the city.
d) You'll survive.
e) Lololololol. Go ahead and enjoy the roppongi meat markets. The type of girl that will sleep with you on the first night probably has a nice collection of STDs you can sample.

I have to agree with this Anon. You must have serious insecurities and low self-esteem if you care what a bunch of nips think of you.

No such insecurities here, I just hate racism and prefer not to be on the receiving end of it since I wouldn't be dealing it either.

Then you'd like Japan, since the people will generally be nice to you.

a) There is some racism of course but you have to deal with any of it because everyone is way too polite to show it.

b) The prices are comparable to London, maybe even a bit more expensive.

c) Just get a tourist guide a see the places that are in there. I'd also recommend Shimokitazawa, it's a part of Tokyo that's home to many subcultural people and somehow has still kept its real character. It probably won't be in a tourist guide either.

d) You'll be able to survive without Japanese, but it's gonna be hard at times. Don't expect any English skills or willingsness to speak English from the Japanese.

e) I don't know shit about that. I mean, come on, how fucked up is that?

d) At least learn a few phrases before you go ffs. They'll definitely think you are a twat if you can't even order a beer.

delicious copypasta you must eat it!

a)They'll treat you okay, but will tend to avoid you.

b)Y1000 will get you some nice food if you're not picky, and around Y3000 a night if you sleep in internet cafes.
Get a JR Rail Pass if you're moving a lot.

c) Shibuya, Harajuku, Roppongi (if you're the baka gaijin stereotype)...

d)Nothing. Some people in Tokyo might speak a little, but don't count on it at all.

e)You can get the japanese girls looking for baka gaijins to get outta japan. Well, you can find those anywhere in the world...

>>28943
just to clarify, they want baka gaijins to get out of japan, or they want baka gaijins so that they can get out of japan?

You're the type of white guy I hate when I'm in another country. Loud and arrogant as fuck, not actually having any respect for the place you're in. Expecting everything to be the same as back home.

Fuck you, you make me ashamed to be white.

There's a difference between being arrogant and disrespectful, and carrying yourself with pride and dignity. The thing that makes ME ashamed to be white is the pathetic weeaboos embarrased about their native culture.

The whores will try to get pregnant or some shit, and abuse him financially. Traps, but not the kind you love here at 4chan.

Everyone else will want the baka gaijins to go back to their places. But they won't make it public.

If you're staying in Japan as a tourist, or some other short term activities, racism or the likes won't affect you. It's just like in any other country.

Face it, idiots. Racism is always directed against residents in a certain area, not the tourists just passing through and spending money on everything.

So no, you won't have any racism problems as a while male tourist.

Hey, fuck you. Way to completely misinterpret my post to justify going on some guilt-tripping hippy diatribe.

As a white male the OP spent all his life as the majority, but maybe, just maybe, he can endure being the minority race in a country for two whole weeks or so, especially a country consisting entirely of polite people who are almost afraid of having to speak English with a foreigner. Oh, the horror! Grow some fucking balls, seriously.

has not spent enough time to realize that the politeness is just a veneer -- and that's fine, if you're not staying long.
also lawl at "almost afraid". strike the almost and you're set

How come everyone found it to be so expensive? I was very surprised when visiting Tokyo last year, food and drinks were cheap as hell. But maybe that's because the € is so high at the moment.

I remember having a 3 course meal at a very good italian restaurant including tea and water for 1000yen, and that was in Ginza (mind you, in a back road)

>>29504I remember having a 3 course meal at a very good italian restaurant including tea and water for 1000yen

You struck gold there. Excluding little noodle shops and fast food, I found it rare to eat at a restaurant for less than 3000 yen per person. And food prices in the grocery stores were 2-5x what one would pay in the US, though the quality was better than anything you could buy in the US.
