Denver, Colorado and surrounding areas: Pros: Very cheap. Close to the Rocky Mountains, which offer tons of world class (but expensive) ski resorts, hiking, and plenty of natural beauty. Great if you're an outdoorsy type. Cons: Not a whole lot to do if you aren't into outdoor activities. Sometimes it can snow almost into the summer.
Minneapolis, Minnesota and surrounding areas: Pros: Very cheap, extremely friendly people. You will be surprised just how nice some people in Minnesota are. Generally a modern, liberal city, contrary to what you may have been led to believe about the Midwest. Cons: Winters are BRUTAL, with temperatures approaching -40 at times. With such brutal winters you would expect mild summers, but they can actually be extremely hot and humid as well, with temperatures often in the upper 30s Celsius (that's the 90s Fahrenheit), combine that with 90% humidity and it can be hellish. Perhaps a bit more family oriented, not so sure what it would be like for a 19 year old.
AVOID THESE PLACES AT ALL COSTS: New York, Boston, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, anywhere in the South (that includes Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana). Virginia is an exception to the South rule, but only in the Washington DC area. Florida should also be avoided due to overwhelming amounts of drug dealing Cubans and old people.
