So what does /trv/ think of Egypt and S.Africa?

My family wants to go do there for some reason.

My friend's family goes to Egypt often and they love it, but they're also Egyptian themselves, so that probably makes a big difference. I'd say to hell with S. Africa though, Egypt should be fun though.

Don't go to any country in Africa. Ever. Its not very fun, and from my travels there, I was attacked and robbed many times.

When I went to Egypt it was very, very poor. Keep a good watch on your bags, and don't ask a stranger to hold your camera and take a photo of you. You'll either get charged for it back, or they'll just run off.
And if you visit the pyramids/Cairo, don't accept these 'gifts' that everyone will offer you - they'll shove some small item into your hands, insists it's a free gift, but as soon as you take it they'll demand you pay for it. If you don't, they'll get their buddies to get you. Just keep a close eye on your shit, the one year my uncle was distracted long enough by a woman for her kids to cut open the bottom of his back and steal everything in it. How he didn't notice I don't know, but they're crafty buggers. The Cairo museum is wonderful though. I liked Egypt, will probably go gain some day.

Oh shi-

Would I still have to be worried if we travelled in a big group?

With tour guides and everything, I mean.

As long as you're reasonably intelligent ( don't keep your wallet in the back pocket of jean pants or anything), you'll be fine.
