Anyone here ever been overseas via tanker or container ship? Im looking at getting from here in Oztralia to some place in Asia.. Singapore or Hong Kong or something. I know there ARE ships doing a weekly service from melbourne to Hong Kong, but it says they 'dont take passengers', but I'd work or something to get accross. Ive been to these 'tourist agents' that deal with people wanting that 'authentic experience' but they charge 3500aud to get from Melb to Singapore.. 12 days of travel and they can get fucked.

So anyone been ANYWHERE on a ship (not a cruise line).. I wanna know if it's even possible.

Cheers!

Tampa Boat people, children overboard, worked for them and for John Howard

Some of these places are so cheap you could buy up entire communities single-handedly. I'm planning a trip to PNG, pretty shithouse place but I'm interested nevertheless. I didn't realise until recently Australia actually owned Papua between 1919 and 1974

None of them are cheap anymore. It's generally costs $100+ US per person per day now because of all the paperwork that's required when passing through different country's waters. It's almost always cheaper to fly, which is crazy considering it only costs $3000 US to ship an entire container from China to America, but amazing that requires less paperwork and doesn't need feeding!

Is work for transit on ships a viable option anywhere in the world still? I want to make it over to Europe or Asia one day and, holy piss, i do _not_ want to drop close to $1k or more on a goddamn flight.

well, now. Last time I went to a poor-ish country was over 15 years ago now, so that would have changed.

I'm pretty sure it was annexed by QLD back in the 1800's.

op: casual bump - it does indeed seem like flying is the only option, which sucks... boats are much more adventurous but Im not going to give up hope. Time to start hounding shipping agencies? (begging)

The certification is easier to obtain than one would initially think. Google it.

What exact certification is it?
This has piqued my interest since I want to be a man of the sea and grow a beard.
