ITT: Auckland, New Zealand.

Soup /trv/, ausfag here. I think that Auckland is probably one of the best cities in the world. I mean this in terms of what the city has to offer itself, but particularly of the lifestyle benefits of living there. Sort of like Sydney (which I also love), but in a nicer geographical setting and without being so overrated.

So /trv/ tell me your views on Auckland (and also where you live currently).

Auckland: trying so hard to be something it's not.

ENJOY YOUR HIGHWAYS!

Love, kisses, and rainbows,
Christchurch.

lol, I live in sydney, its shit. Public transport is terrible, pretty when looking @ it from the harbour tho.

ofc never been to another capital except for canberra, which is a glorified farm hill.

Auckland is pretty much a wannabe-Sydney.

Lots of good beaches and islands nearby though

How much do you think NZ can sell Auckland to the Aussies for? this includes Manukau

Some parts are nice, some arn't. The same with any city.
West Coast beaches are mean if you want some adventure, only 40mins from city centre. Or else there are inner city beaches like 5 minutes away.

On the whole the lifestyle if sweet, especially for growing up

OP here, I think Sydney is the greatest city in Aus and that Brisbane is soulless. But nevertheless, Sydney is still overrated and just not as pretty as Auckland (both the city itself and greater area).

Thanks anon. What's it like to live in Auckland if you're young, no kids, reasonable->good income and want to live centrally??? I mean this in terms of cost of living, nightlife, cafes/restaurants etc. etc. ???

Also, would you classify it as an "international" city to a certain degree??
>> Anonymous
>>72006
Not the one you're quoting, but another Auckland'er here.

Cost of living in the central Auckland would be pretty high. I would suggest living in Birkenhead/Chatswood area as it's a 5 minute drive or bus ride to inner city. Petrol costs around $2 a litre. The nightlife is alright if you have connections. Some nice restaurants around, High Street is where you go to find Auckland trendiest street.

OP is a brisfag?
im a new zealander living in brisbane.

keep out of south Auckland. i went back there for a week to see family and 3 people in my neighborhood were shot dead. 2 of them were police.

North Shore is nice. live there, and u wont get mugged

OP here, some family friends used to live in Royal Oak - is this considered typical of the shitty southern suburbs?

Neighbourhood looked kind of alright, but they moved out PURELY for the reason of crime and social problems with maori/islander population. Apparently their neighbours were targeted on numerous occassions and I remember their place being almost fortress-like.

Also, how does Brisbane compare with Auckland for lifestyle / liveliness / nightlife???
>> Anonymous
Ok...

This is very strange, I was just having a conversation with a friend about moving to New Zealand, this has always been his dream.

We both grew up in Chicago. We're applying for our passports right now, visas soon to follow.

Is there any advice for a wannabe Kiwi? Anything we should know beforehand that you only understand by living there?

Any job advice?

>>72039Also, how does Brisbane compare with Auckland for lifestyle / liveliness / nightlife???
All the Kiwi's I know here love it.Most of them say they wouldn't move back. Only problem is that they seem to melt in summer.

I am mates with a shitload of Kiwi's due to where I used to work and I aways thought that they were just bullshitting about crime in parts of Auckland. It's pretty hilarious to find out that their stories might have some truth to them.

jobs are low paying but not hard to get due to black fellas being lazy as fuck. i advise moving to somewhere on the south island. eg Queenstown, Dunedin, Christchurch.

I swear there's at least one NZ thread on page 1 of /trv/ everytime I come.
One more Aucklander here, born and raised to european immigrant parents. Only city I've ever known and I like it I guess..

>>72068
There's a lot of media hype about crime in South Auckland.. I mean, I wouldn't wanna have to walk around at night, or during the day by myself, but it's not the fucking LA hoods..
There are well publicised violent robberies and shit now and then, but like I said it's just the media being shitstirring leeches.

Some of the more central suburbs are really cool. The North Shore is mostly safe middleclass haven, though it has it's dodgy spots as well (Anyone remember the thugs who smashed a Russian couple in their car - "You ever seen a real gangsta?! - BOOM")

Obviously the best thing going for Auckland is it's surroundings.. West Coast, Hauraki Gulf and it's islands. Nice beaches everywhere, cold water though, but EMPTY compared to beaches I've seen overseas.

CBD sucks in my opinion.. And yes there are crazy numbers of Asian students, it's ridiculous.

I hear there are quite substantial problems with Maoris/Islanders, particularly concentrated in Auckland. Largely associated with crime and high rates of unemployment/poverty. Also simple things like, you'd often walk down an Auckland street and a group of maori men would approach in the other direction, very intimidating..
Really is it that big an issue? Enough to induce a negative opinion of the city???

No way man, it's usually blown out of proportion.

Could you handle our accents?

It's harder to make friends in NZ than it is in America... the people aren't as forward and open.

Let's be honest here. Auckland is a waste pit. The only reason to go there is it's airport is the gateway in and out of the country.

Arrive in Auckland.
Walk to the domestic terminal.
Catch a flight to Wellington.
Enjoy living in a city that doesn't suck shit.

OP here, this thread was finished, why bump it?

Furthermore, Wellington sucks arse compared to Auckland. Hell, even Christchurch is better than it. My parents grew up in Wainuiomata as well as other parts of Lower Hutt. Both of those places are astronomically shit and the city is boring as fuck. Nightlife is average at best too. Enjoy your tedious bore-town, anon.
>> Anonymous
>>72838

Wainuiomata. Lower Hutt. Two very valid reasons ypu're not of a sound genetic make-up.

Christchurch is good if you
a) drive a rotary around at 3am without mufflers
b) hate anyone without white skin
c) get your kicks from sports bars/taking home the 'girls' who visit sports bars
c) enjoy living in the worlds largest suburb (seen the 'center' of the city lately? lulz to the extreme

Auckland's got appalling nightlife, unless you enjoy having to spend $400 on taxis every night, or prefer to walk 30 minutes from bar to bar and get into 3 fights on the way. There's a reason why there's so much violence in Auckland, and that's because deep down everyone knows it's shit.

Enjoy your culture-less cesspools anon

I LIKE BOTH C)'s.

Wow, so my parents lived in poorer areas of Wellington that automatically makes me genetically inferior/corrupt? I'll have you know both came from Hungarian immigrant families and have not had it easy, so might I suggest removing your elitist head from your arsehole?

I don't like wellington, and I assume it's the same reason with my parents given we moved to Australia. It is however the NZ city I know most, and I can tell you I'd rather live in the other two major cities anyday.

Hey its the qouted anon again.

Um if you are good at making mates, and are pretty chilled, then no probs at all. People are easy going.

Depending on money, I'd recomment North Shore or West.

If you have a means of making mates, such as a sport, then you will be all goods.

International city... mmmm.
Well I know AU is internationally recognized, so that kinda gives some credit to the rest of the city. Plenty of foreigners walking around, Auckland is a real cultural melting pot.

Night clubs, may not be world class, but still there.
