Anyway, OP, I was there not too long ago. I stayed about an hour outside of Kona, because honestly, there isn't too much in Kona. I did mostly outdoorsy things, like horseback riding, snorkeling, hiking, etc. I did visit the volcanos, visited a black sand beach, and hiked a few miles to a green sand beach on the southern most point of the island.
I've heard that there's more on the Hilo side, but I quite liked the trip. Being away from a bunch of people was very relaxing, and I didn't run into a single rude person.
