Hey /trv/. One of the things I really want to do within the next few years is hitchhike some significant distance. The problem is, I'm a young woman (just turned 18). I'm neither a whale nor someone with self-defense skills. Is hitchhiking alone even feasible without great risk? I grew up thinking it was completely out of the question, but I want to verify that with some seasoned travelers before ruling it out completely.

May be illegal depending on where you are. Of course the more important question is if it's enforced or not. Traveling, even if hitchhiking, alone is always not recommended. My first thought is that it's not too feasible. You might as well just go camping or something.

Whereabouts do you intend to hitchhike? Realistically I don't think you're at risk. I hitchhiked a lot many years ago, never had a problem. People who pick up hitchhikers are inherently nice people, so it can be fun.

there was a book released about a woman who hitchhiked from the eastcoast to the westcoast. She got into a car driven by a man, in the passenger seat was his young wife and infant child. She figured it was safe because it looked like a wholesome family, but she got kidnapped for about a decade, brainwashed into believing she was a registered slave, and was physically, emotionally, and sexually abused the entire time.

Not to say this would happen to you, but it's a very big risk. If you're going alone, that's even more dangerous. I wouldn't recommend doing this even for a guy with self defense skills.

Anyway, if you're hellbent on doing this, buy one of those hand held stungun thingies.

It might be hard to get picked up these days by normal people, because normal people are usually wary of hitchhikers (they can kill/rob/rape/etc you) so the only people you'd have picking you up are those rare extremely kind hearted and naive people or people who will or want to kill/rob/rape/etc you.

this also depends on where you're going. in the US it's a bad idea. i've seen plenty of girls hitchhike in norway and belgium... Don't know what happened to them though

It's been a long time since I saw hitchers.
Used to be very common in the U.S. Southwest.
I susect the police will hassle you nowadays.

Only one of two people will pick up hitchhikers.
1) Inherently nice people.
2) Rapists, Sadists, etc.

Seeing as you're a female with no self-defense skills, expect the latter.

I'd go with what this anon says, as my motto is "Hope for the best, but expect the worst".
Expect the worst.

Then again, sadists have been known to rush up to helpless people at bus stops, claim they need help and then stab them and bring them back to their squats for rape.
Are we gonna' avoid bus-stops now? How about hostels? That movie scared the shit out of me!

Guys, seriously, the likelihood of being the next person in a sadists basement is equivalent to being struck by lightening.

and that is possible, i mean to be striken by a lighting

anyway, i wouldn't recommend it, because it is no fun at all
why would you want to do it, for some lulz or what, it's depressign to play bum who can't afford a bus ticket also>>70729doesn't sound like a lot of fun

really, if you want to talk with foreign people do some pubs or something in the location of your preference, but don't do that hitchhiking thing

Honestly I would probably pick you up and rape and kill you.
The best thing to do would be to find a friend to go with, preferably a guy, and bring knives.

Not everyone CAN afford a bus-ticket. I'm a cheapo traveller, and yes I've had trouble at times but nothing I couldn't deal with. I dumpster dive, camp on the sly, busk and work along the way to fund myself AND I hitchhike.

The worst thing that ever happened to me was getting in a car with a drunk driver and then having to tell the cops "it was all him, I'm just a hitchhiker! Save me, please!" and then being taken the opposite direction of where I wanted to go with the cops. I wasn't charged for anything, but they gave me the whole 'dun be hitchhikin there's niggas out there' spiel.

Anyway, if you're nervous, only hitch truckers. They've got a schedule to keep and wouldn't have time to off somebody along the way, plus they would probably like the company too much to kill ya'.
Yeah, yeah, they can get a little frisky but a stern "no" is enough to stop 'em.
