Wear flip flops in the shower, expect people to walk around in tiny underwear, sleep with your bag next to you, turn your cell phone on silent.

Are you coming to America to stay? I'm only used to euro/japanese hostels. You should be fine, just keep an eye on your shit.

People may/may not steal your shit. I stayed in youth hostels when I was on leave in the Army while stationed in Germany... I walked out of my concern and hiked. Generally you meet awesome people in the hostels. I never had a problem with anybody there, but keep in mind, people are usually more broke then you, and if you leave an oppurtunity, they will steal your shit.

Most people staying are not there in the rooms except when they are sleeping... they vacate and do whatever untill its crash-time.

Sharing showers sucks, it might take a long time before you can take a shower, it depends on the hour you wake up. People that snore. That shit is the main downfall of typical youth hostels. I stopped caring dude... and if they woke me up with their snoring, I'd wake them up.

Just shake them awake and say "oh, sorry, nevermind" and they will fall back to sleep, and shift in the bed, and won't snore. You can say "ist tude mir leid, macht nicht" In German. Generally, people asleep won't care if they are awaken by a stranger in a youth hostel... you say something confusing like "oh, sorry" they won't even remember.

Its better then sleeping in the woods, which sucks... I once sleep 300 meters in the woods and somehow woke up to 2 polizie dudes asking me why I was sleeping in the woods.

Fuck you german cops.
