Hey /trv/, what bags have you used for backpacking?

I plan on going myself soon, and some recommendations would be nice. Preferably those that are small enough to use for a carry-on, but any kind is fine, I just wanna know what you guys have used.

this is relevant to my interests

I've never used anything for true backpacking that would qualify as a carry-on. Now, if you're talking about bags that I stuffed shit in and carried it on my back, that's a different story.

Everything I've used for backpacking is way too big for carry-on.

Anything small enough for carry-on is too small to backpack with. Most backpacks come with a detachable carry on smaller day-pack kind of thing. My Palooka 75l backpack has one of those and it does the job well.

Oh, well shit, I guess that's good to know.

Forget the carry-on thing then!

i have a big rucksack (actually given that rucksack in the british word, why don't british people call themselves rucksackers?) and a satchel type bag for everyday use. it's hold less than a small rucksack. but it's much more conveniant to use, because you don't have to keep taking it off to into it and you don't have to worry as much about people stealing from you when you are carrying it around.

Personally I travel as lightly as possible, but then I'm more inclined toward vagabonding than actual hostel-staying back-backing.

I own a military surplus bag (a black Austrain army patrol pack, if you want to know), which does me fine.
