/trv/ ive decided to i'm ready to commit, and learn a second language. the problem, is im torn between russian and french. on one hand, i enjoy the french language and culture, and would love to travel france. alternativel, i absolutely love the russian language, more so than french, and imagine i would enjoy speaking it slightly more. im not sure i would like to travel russia as much though. what do you think?

Learn Alsatian!

Learn Russian because then you can pretend your writing in machine code.

More chocolate sauce please.

Russia would be a far more...interesting place to visit than France.
>> Anonymous
If you think travelling to France is better than travelling to Russia, you're severely misguided, or still think of the countries as they were in the 90s.

Without any trace of a doubt: Russian.
>> Anonymous
FUCKING RUSSIAN. Ignore shitty media propaganda, Russia is a totally awesome and fun country and the language is so much better than French.
>> Anonymous
If Russians hadn't failed communism, I could consider it, but now? Noo...
>> Anonymous
Russia is shit broke and still loves our almighty dollar, learn Russian

As someone who's taken French and Russian, if you're craving a language that won't be a pain in the nuts with cases and will just be finicky with accents and what-not, French is truly free flowing and wonderful.

If you're looking for a good language to have that in a few years politically will be important as well, go Russian.

With traveling in mind, both countries have a great deal to offer, Russia still does love US currency as it's been said and there is that aura of mystique due to how the US made it seem so forbidden for years.

You can't go wrong either way, it's just up to how much time you want to invest. Less time: French, more time: Russian.

French

Russian is too different than english

op here, can i get some more info on traveling about in russia. ive came to realize, im not as near informed on russian traveling as i am french.
i guess france seems nice because im interested in there history slightly more, particularly there military history. good food, good music. ive heard alot of good things about there beaches, mountains. i love art, and paris has some of the greatest museums in the world and of course, paris is an absolutely beautiful city.

Russian sounds like spoken English recorded and then played backwards. Terrible language. Still better than French though.

You'll need an official invite to enter Russia. If you go with a travel agency they'll sort it out for you.

I never understood why anyone would want to go to Russia. Someone enlighten me please, most of it looks like a 3rd world shithole.

French, no contest.

Why would you want to learn russian? Russia is a complete shithole, and that is not about to change. Also azbuka means harder to learn, and it is rather useless outside of eastern europe.

Russia is a third world country.
It has some nice areas, but then again, so does Nigeria.

If you don't believe me, take a look at the United Nations Human Development Index, which measures living standards in the world. Russia has pretty much the same score as Brazil, and lower than Mexico.
The country has a life expectancy of 68 years, for fuck's sake!

>>19430
let's not forget that Russia has a higher literacy rate than America and its higher educational graduate rates are higher than any other country in Europe.

Oh wait.

Having the 7th highest GDP after having to go through all the crap Russia did, Cold war, completely changing your economy, etc.

Worlds largest gas reserves you say? Growing quickly? 2nd largest supplies of coal?

I'm beginning to think you might not even know what a 3rd world country is.

>>19434

A country that is neither in NATO or in the Warsaw Pact. Russia fits the bill.
>> Anonymous
>>19438
The Warsaw Pact no longer exists, and Russia probably cooks the books (like all oligarchies) on it's educational statistics.

>>19441

I know, there's no second world anymore.

Ireland, Switzerland and Sweden are third world countries too, it doesn't really mean anything
>> Anonymous

lol wut. Those 3 countries are in the top ten of the UN's human development index, above the USA. They are not classed as 3rd world.

I heard russian is pretty rediciolous in some grammar points. But if they dont have a gender system with their words and use phonetic spelling, then I say HELL YEAH!

Source?

>>19469
There are and were some very proficient Russian writers and thinkers, but culture? What is this culture? Getting drunk? You will find that the culture of slavic russia is even more drained out than in Scandinavia - for reference.

Also, I've found it very hard to travel through Russia due to absurdly cumbersome beaurocracy.

I studied french for 3 years, with no interest in learning a language (I needed to do it as part of the English schooling system; well, we had the choice between french and german and I truely regret not taking german), so I didn't do too well and can hardly remember any of it. I went to france a few years ago and was able to ask for simple things such as directions and order food, which was rather cool.

Although I failed quite miserably at learning a language, this is my opinion on taking one on: pick one that makes the most sense to you, and has the less differences to your current language (english, obviously).

I thought I got a bit lucky by picking french over german, but I had a few friends learning german and they were talking about how similar it is to english, and how easy it was to pick up. I found the difference really off putting for me.

Obviously saying the difference between english and french was hard was quite a weak mentallity towards learning, which is possibly why I didn't do too well lolz.

I'm getting bored typing this and can't really remember my point; but:

tl;dr: Pick french, it seems way easier than russian, as it is a lot more 'samey' towards english.

Oh man. French really pissed me off at GCSE. I took both French and German. It's so annoying to go from a German class where everything is phonetic, and stroll into French class where the silent letters practically attack you, sucking the life away, one 45-minute class at a time.
>> Anonymous
french is hard but you can learn italian, spanish easily after

Russian is extremely difficult and a bit useless if you are out of Russia, learn chinese it will be more useful even if I hate those fukken chinks

Err, I lived in Russia for 5 years. Horrible troll.
>> Anonymous
>>19644
But Russia's "insane education" is not much better than that of America or any other Western country.

And it's the only factor that they can be proud about.
In every other socioeconomic indicator (healthcare, poverty, GDP per capita, HDI, etc.) they rank alongside the third world.

commies are, but I'm fairly certain that with the advent of capitalism there this unprofitable scheme will disappear graudally

I mean, near 100% literacy rate in fucking uzbekistan? not for long...
>> Anonymous
Actually, this may sound odd but why not try learning one of the root slovik languages? Or, you could learn latin and then have a good basis for most the romance languages (Spanish, French, etc). In any case, the fact you are willing to learn a second language is a step in the right direction. Good work!

What a strange comment.

While it is true that Russia have a well-educated and, by comparison to other european countries, rich middleclass, they make up an extremely small part of the populace.

One must also realize that the Orthodox russian church, which has seen a monumental rise in power since the fall of the Soviet Union, now plays a major part in the lives of average russians.

It is no secret that Putin used or bargained with the church, and this "holding backs" agreement is not going to change with Medvedev as supposed president.

The average russian lives in rural areas, and the common denominator is poverty and orthodox religion - this is not a very good combination.

I moved to Sweden from Russia two years ago, and while I still love the history and culture of my country I do not wish to move back there.

As for OP, russian is a very interesting and I think beautiful language, so if you are not obsessed with the utility aspect go for it.

Because totalitarian regimes value truth over image, right? If you actually think Cuba or Soviet had good education compared to, say, Germany or France - I am at loss of words.
