Einigkeit und recht und freiheit, oh my! Anonymous
Hallo...

So I'm studying at university and have found myself with an urge to learn die Deutsche Sprache... I'm around people who study it or speak it fluently, study it or at least did it at school, and the only experience I have with the language is from Rammstein, Laibach, Tanzwut, and a phrasebook. I feel very inadequate! I did Russian at school and er, I didn't do very well. With very little money to spare I don't think I'll be able to waltz up to the Goethe-Institut and give them £140 for a beginner's course. So I'm not sure what options I have for learning the language. Any suggestions?

Vielen danke :3

You can probably find a pirated copy of German Rosetta stone on a torrent site somewhere - I've heard its actually pretty good for learning languages

Oh I've tried, believe me. I have the Russian one on my computer right now. But I can't find a good torrent for the German language packs ¬_¬

<--And this is where I live.

dude german is a stupid language. you will have no problem learning it, but it won't be fun for you. the thought process from english -> german isn't very different, at least not in any interesting way.

like i said, you could learn it easily if you've got any skill in language. there's just a bunch of stupid rules to memorize.

but if you must, find the rosetta stone. it's out there, i found it not long ago.

actually german is not that easy to learn.

OP: the best way is to DL movies / sitcoms and
watch then in german with english subs etc. Viel Erfolg!

Deployed to Baghdad, here on our base 2 bucks will get you a Rosetta Stone disk with 29 different languages on it! The only catch is that you have to be in Iraq to get it!

Learning from TV and film is an interesting idea actually. My friend was going to lend me Good Bye Lenin, so I may give that a go. My internet connection sucks though so I'm not sure I'll be able to download very much. Is Heimat good? My dad rented it ages ago. I think some of my compatriots would laugh at the idea of a German sitcom rather than the thing itself, but I'm intrigued...

Speaking as an American doing 5th century Greek, Latin, Sanskrit and Old Persian in addition to German this semester, and French, Old English, Arabic, and Spanish previously, yes, German is easy for a native speaker of English to learn. If you want to compare it to Spanish or Esperanto or something, it might be difficult, but there are a ton of cognates and the basic grammatical structures are very similar.

Now if English isn't your first language or you're comparing this to other subjects in school, I can see where you're coming from.

hehe good luck. in that case you could also try buying dvds from
amazon.de like "Stromberg" (german version of "The Office") - pretty amusing.
also: amazon.com has a section packed with german-language dvds (dvds->foreign / intl -> germany)
btw dont be fooled into thinking "Goodbye Lening" is a comedy - its not. its not a bad movie or anything, just
the trailers suggest it being somewhat different from what its actually like.
for german comedy (tons on youtube) look for harald schmidt or stefan raab (tv total).

german actually is my mothertongue.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to learn German? It is spoken by about only 100 million people and it's almost the same as English. Different pronounciation but very similar grammar and vocabulary.
Why don't you learn a language that is actually useful, like Spanish or Chinese?
Whatever, you'll lose interest soon anyways because to learn a language you actually have to use it. A lot. Won't happen in Manchester.
