So /trv/ this probably gets asked a lot, but I've decided to backpack around Europe for a month and I was wondering what the best way is to keep my stuff like passport, wallet etc. safe?

The pouches around your neck are still pretty easy to snatch and most robbers with any experience will ask you for it.
I would suggest a money belt, a thing flat wallet like thing that hangs I put on the inside of my wasteband.

You might get a few odd stares when you dig in your pants for cash but who cares?
When traveling to more dangerous areas like western Africa or in Thailand I took an old pair of sneakers with me where I hollowed out space for things like my credit card (which I really only use in emergency situations anyway).

Whoah, dont do this! In those areas its no uncommon for robbers to actulay steal your shoes, or if your clothes are nice they will leave you naked.

this is true, The best thing to do in africa is to always keep a hand on your wallet and to travel in a group. A thick strapped purse or a backpack is good as long as it never leaves your line of sight, also NEVER keep all your money in one place, and never leave anything valuable and small in your hotel room.

In most of Europe you actually don't need to overprepare. You most likely won't be robbed by knife- or gunpoint, but pickpocketed instead.

You can prepare by having zippers on your pockets. Also, if you are used to carrying a wallet, disperse it's contents in your pockets and go without it. It'll feel weird, but if you loose one picket's contents, you still have the rest.

Do not let people lend your cell phone, and don't leave your backpack unattended - it might very well disappear. If you are afraid people will rifle through your pack in a busy area, keep it in front of you. Simple stuff like this is all you need, really. If you can avoid it, don't carry too much currency on you. Cards you can always cancel.
