Don't expect any courtesy at all from the French.

I don't think mean to be rude, they're just so self centered they don't even notice other people.
>> Anonymous
Go somewhere else as soon as you get there

It's a horrible place and the people are twats

Even the French hate Parisians

In my final year of high school, we had a trip to Greece. To not be complete assholes, we all learned some courtesy words and simple questions ("where's the restroom?", "what time is it?", stuff like that). On our first day there, we had a guy tell us that "you don't need to speak Greek because we're not stuck up like the French".

God damn, Greece is awesome. Go there instead OP.

Parisians are pig disgusting. Rudest people on the Earth and mostly the reason why a lot of people hate the French.
>> Anonymous
I live in Paris. It sucks mostly. Go to Monmarte and the Centre Pompidou. Those are the only good places in the standard tourist fare.
>> Anonymous
There's a Centre Pompidou in Metz (although it isn't fully open yet) and that's a much nicer city

More like Montmartre
I like how french people is hating their own capitol.
Anyway, Paris can be a great city if you know how to handle people. Parisians aren't so bad (In fact, they are when you know french people can be so much better anywhere else [Except Normandy]) but you MUST avoid the Champs-Elysées and the metro. Try the Concorde place, go to the Louvre, enjoy a coffee in Montmartre, walf a little in Luxembourg Garden, visit the Notre-Dâme cathedral and the Pantheon, all is great.

>>11398
The Fontaine de Medicis in the Jardin du Luxembourg is a nice place to sit and relax. But other than that most of the places you listed are tourist traps.

I especially hate the Musee du Louvre. All the paintings look the same: everyone of them is some variant on the Madonna and Child. The Musee d'Orsay is slightly better, but not much.

Paris is expensive, the people are rude, french, smelly, hairy, inconsiderate and arrogant. It's really really overrated. realy.
>> Anonymous
Paris was fucking awesome. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Just stay the fuck away from the ghettos. I was exploring the city on foot when I stumbled upon one...I've never seen so many nigras in my life in one area...

The best advice I can give you: go to Versailles on a weekend. It was absolutely the highlight of my trip.

Also, fun fact: girls in and around Paris were by far the most attractive I've ever seen. EVAR.
>> Anonymous
I fucking hate the metro. Don't avoid it because it's really convenient, but I must've been unlucky or special or something, because seventy percent of the time my tickets wouldn't work and I'd get stuck and have to go through with the people I was traveling with. Horribly annoying repeated experience.

Otherwise, it's a great city. Go site seeing and eat a lot.
>> Anonymous
>There are something like 20 museums in Paris. The Quai Branly museum is awesome

Actually, it's much more than that, there are 57 "grands musées", plus a lot a smaller ones, in Paris alone. It's an awesome city, and if you don't like the natives, go in August, when most of the Parisians have left for the holidays and there are more foreigners than locals.
Personally I've never had to complain about the French, I suspect that people that do are used to countries where the locals suck up on foreigners to get money out of us. You can't buy the French that way but it's easy enough to become friends (or even lovers) with them - at least for those of us who don't go with a head full of prejudices and stereotypes.

On the minus side, the weak dollar has made the place damn expensive these days.

Slightly related, because I saw some Americans in Paris who were confused: is it true that American credit cards don't have PINs?

Sometimes happen if you keep them near a magnet (like a lady's handbag for example).
Just ask for a replacement, they'll give you new tickets.

I spent quite a while in Paris a few years back, eventually travelling around France afterwards. Paris was the absolute worst part. More cathedrals and museums than you can shake a stick at, but some people we ran into were just awful.

What this anon says. The French are fine as long as you aren't rude and obnoxious yourself. They're just very blunt. Also, if you're relatively attractive it helps your case.

We are not rude, but when you are in Paris you always see japanese who take pictures every second, americans with their new t-shit "I LOVE PARIS" ... it is boring and we know that everybody hate us so what we should say?

Parisians arn't asses, Americans are. They march in with their US flag shit and expect every native to speak English. As long as you don't forget your manners and learn a few key terms ('please', 'thank you', etc) you should be fine. Srsly, common fucking sense. (if you wouldn't do it at home, then don't do it anywhere else)

Then again I'm a brown girl and apparently the French like brown girls. Also, I'm American.

I've been there two weeks ago, really a beautiful city, just by walking around randomly you can have a great esperience.
And Parisians, despite what ignorant asshats say, are quite friendly.
>> Anonymous
Yes. Ask politely, and we will respond in the same manner. Note that many of us are not that fluent in English, so what may seems arrogant is often simple misunderstanding.

And on the other hand, if you're going to a café or a bar, and the waiter doesn't even notice you, don't get too angry. They tend to do that, even with Parisians. If they knowingly ignore you, just leave, and find a nicer place.

This might be pushing relevancy, but I'm considering studying the rest of my high school as a foreign exchange student in Paris. I have 2 years left, (spent two years traveling like a bum, so I'm late, I look damn young though.)

The program's pretty cheap, and I know some french, but this program's to learn french as well, been to Paris once and it was wonderful (somewhat of an artfag, I appreciate museums)

Is this a good idea?

French girls are not shy (sometimes even hitting on you) but can be picky and the competition from French guys is very fierce.
But it's always possible to pretend you're French and pick up tourists (Japanese for example). Knowing 3 words of French is enough.

I look like a spaniard, or Greek.

That doesn't really matter to me though, I don't doubt that dating opportunities will be high wherever I go.

When I went to Paris no one was any more rude than anyone from anywhere else in the world. It didn't smell. The women aren't slutty because I didn't get hit on once and I'm not extremely ugly or anything. >> Anonymous
>apparently the French like brown girls
>I look like a spaniard, or Greek.
>No one in Europe likes Americans.

These don't really apply to France because their country was made up of many once-independent states, some of which had quite different populations.
They often can tell that someone is from Alsace, Bretagne, Provence ... just by his name, accent, hair/skin color or lifestyle. Some regions even have languages that are completely unrelated to French. In addition, they conquered parts of neighboring countries (Italy, Spain, German Empire) and they've had immigrants from all over the world for centuries now.
Thus, they're typically highly tolerant of "foreigners". This is reinforced by their national ideals of equality, and it's the country of the human rights (which apply to *all* humans, not just French citizens).
So apart from the odd racist (who are seen as scum), they don't care what your color / nationality / religion is. That's why looking "brown" or greek-ish isn't a "problem" there. That's also why being an American WASP isn't an "advantage" in itself.

Other European countries have different attitudes, however.

>Try to pick up some french first. I don't know about france but in Quebec a lot of them hate people who come and speak english all the time, due to the whole "assimilation!" frenzy.

It's completely different in France. Quebec is sorta "under attack" from English speakers (due to being right next to the USA), but France is not, in fact the French language even has a tendency to slowly gain ground against Germanic languages (for example, in Belgium the Dutch-speaking part has laws forbidding kids from speaking French at school ; the French-speaking part doesn't need these kind of laws).
So nobody's gonna hate you for speaking only a foreign language, English or whatever.

That being said, you may sometimes have trouble being understood. Unlike in most other countries, French people don't *need* to speak English, and most don't bother to learn it. Plus quite a few are taught German or Spanish at school, not English.

I used to do that in Boston all the time, but then they replaced the turnstiles with electronic doors.

Most stations in Paris nowadays have the turnstiles positioned so that it's also pretty hard do that since you don't have anything to push off on.
