I don't live in SF or the bay area (from Sacramento) but I've been there many times, and know quite a few people who live there or used to live there.
baisically, it's really expensive, pretty cold all of the time. another thing that people don't talk about though is how impossible it is to drive there. it's like driving in Mexico with incredibly steep hills.

That having been said, it's a nice place to visit for a few days or a week, but I get sick of it rather quickly. it all just depends on the person. I know people who FUCKING LOVE SAN FRANCISCO and people who just plain hate it.
SFSU isn't in the greatest location, in my opinion, it's pretty windy there most of the time. Also, it's a pretty expensive place to party if you're in college.

I've been there

I saw lots of homeless, but I didn't see any flamboyantly homosexual people

Not really interested in parties. Never have before. Also, I'm used to the cold and don't mind it. I didn't stop wearing just short-sleeved shirts with no jacket this year until it got down to like 43 degrees, when people yelled at me for my choice of clothing, and for being warm on top of that.

Don't mind the expensiveness. I'll be living in the dorms anyway. Free place to stay, pretty much, since it's added to the tuition and my job offers full tuition reimbursement. I'll have some money saved up beforehand, as well. And after school I can just find a roommate.

I'll probably be one of those people who FUCKING LOVE SAN FRANCISCO, but we'll see, I guess.

San Francisco is a very beautiful, culturally crossed city. there's many different authentic foods to try and many events. dogs are everywhere-- SF has one one the highest dog to people ratio in the country. When its sunny the city shines beautifully- never too hot or cold, just perfect.

I'm from LA and visited SF for the first time this past New Year's Eve and loved it. The people we stayed with live on top of a bar in the Haight Ashbury district, it was pretty fun. They showed us around, took us on a tour of some cool places and all that.

I loved the architecture and the general vibe of the city. It seemed like everyone we met there was so friendly too. Although I got the impression that it wouldn't be a good place to visit unless you had some insider knowledge on what to do. I liked the public transportation, it was pretty convenient. Most everything is in walking distance too.

I entertained the thought of living there for a while, but realized how ridiculously expensive it is, plus the fact I have little tolerance for cold/rainy weather. It is a pretty dirty place too, I saw dudes pissing on the streets one more than one occasion.

i'm going there with school, visiting some tourist stuff, nba, ea, cisco, yellowstone national parks.. in 10day's, think it will be nice. any things i have to know/do/donts? i'm from belgium btw

Don't go to Pier 39 or Fisherman's Wharf, unless you're there on the way to Alcatraz. It's a tourist trap.

If you want to try out some local beers go to Toronado in Lower Haight. Maybe go in the late afternoon though, because it gets crowded at night. Oh yeah, grab a sausage from next door and bring it into the bar.

Here's some moar tips for /trv/elers coming to SF. Downtown Edition. I might post more later.

Downtown/Embarcadero:
Ferry Building - Good place to get lunch, and look out at the water. Also home of The Slanted Door, apparently a good Vietnamese restaurant. I've only been to the more casual annex of it in the Westfield Center (Out the Door), it's pretty good.

Shopping - The only reason I really go downtown is for shopping. That's all Union Square is really there for. There are some big department stores like Bloomingdale's that are kind of funny to look around, if only to see $100 dishes.

Food - Not much. Everything is either bad or expensive. An exception is Katana-ya on Geary; probably the best Ramen in San Francisco. The food court in the new part of the Westfield Center isn't too bad either. You might want to walk to the Tenderloin and get some curry though.
