I'm curious as to what anons of some countries have been taught in history class in school, especially about periods when their ancestors had no sovereign state.

For instance;

Israel. Like, do you guys learn more about the history of the landmass that is today called Israel or more about the history of the Israelites? And what about that of Jewish communities worldwide?

What do Greek, Arab, Romanian etc anons learn about the period under Ottoman rule? I reckon revolts and whatnot would be covered, but is that it?

Do Peruvians learn about Inca history as well as post Spanish conquest history?

Please do not, by any means, keep this thread limited to these though and share what history classes in your country cover.

OP here.

I'll start. I'm Turkish and our history classes cover the ancient history of Anatolia back to the Hittites and Phrygians etc, but then -as far as Anatolian history is concerned- there is a gap until the Turkic conquest of Anatolia; as well as Turkic history back to the Huns with the biggest emphasis on the Ottoman Empire and the post WWI national movement resulting in the creation of the Republic of Turkey.

Same in Britain, for obvious reasons. It was a long time ago so they might have changed it... I think they have the history of medicine in classses too nowadays. I also remember learning about the industrial revolution back when I took it.

Thanks for helping my curiosity. Though I find it weird that the furthest back your history curriculum goes is the 16th century.

The Netherlands

I remember you start off at hunter-gatherers and move to early farming society.
then ancient Greece
roman empire
origins of the Dutch republic and the 80 years war(our secession from Spain)
discovery of the Americas, interestingly, more focus is put on Mexico then on the USA
French revolution and its consequences
Napoleon, focus on European wars in general
world war 1 and 2
cold war, Vietnam is given extra attention
Dutch colonial empire
development of Dutch society from the 50s onward (till the start of the 90s)

throw the industrial revolution in there somewhere
we also spend a lot of time on the history of china

and that about covers it

To answer OPs question, mostly just ancient Greece and Rome.

3. Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia
4. Ancient Greece and Macedonia
5. Roman Empire
6. Middle Ages and Renaissance
7. The discovery of the Americas
8. Native civilizations of the Americas, Mayans, Aztecs and Incas.
9. The colonization of the Americas. The creation of the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata. Other European colonizations around the world.
10. The French Revolution and its effects around the world.

Amerifag here.

We'd switch between US history and World history every year in elementary school and junior high. Since I was homeschooled through high school, that doesn't really apply to my state at large.

here in the united states, our ancestors have always had a sovereign state. indeed, the stars and bars, i'm proud to say, have never lost a war. We grew larger and larger, stomping the heathens (indians) who would try to take our god-given land from us. They deserved it, though, we let them eat thanksgiving with us one time because all their crops had died, and they try to repay us by stealing our women and scalping our men. Well, look where we are today, in complete control of this whole damn continent, with outposts in virtually every other country in the world, even Cuba. God bless the U.S.A.

We grew larger and larger, stomping the heathens (christians) who would try to take our god-given land from us. A lot of countries killed off their natives, but I don't think that's something to be proud about, nigger. White folks with rifles against indians with spears is not a fair fight.

Canadian Here:

-French come in, and make happy little homes along the lakes and rivers.

-English come in, and decide it should be their happy homes. So the 7 year war happens. Now Great Britain owns the happy little homes.

-IRA within the U.S.A. start causing shit, trying to "Free" Canada from the reign of Great Britain.

-War of 1812 happens between U.S.A. and Canada, we burn down the White House, then we call in a stalemate.

-1867 We become our own nation.

-1982 We aren't governed by Britain anymore.

That was all taught in grade 9 history.

Amerikkkan here.
Early world history begins with Sumeria and ends with Rome. There's Greece in the middle. Apparently, after the fall of Rome, nothing happens in Europe.
Then Spain suddenly appears and discovers our America. There's apparently countries called England and France, they settle some land, too. There's a passing mention of the Netherlands. No Portugal, that would have just confused everyone anyway.
English colonists revolt, George Washington and the founding fathers are great heroes, good times are had for most. Then the United States kills the natives, spreads slavery across the nation, and goes to war with Mexico, because America was racist back then.
We have a Civil War, because the North loves diversity and the South are racist. There are other problems, like federalism, tariffs, the central bank, and the South's reliance on a luxury crop for it's economy, but racism was the biggest one. The South loses because they're not diverse enough, but they're still racist until the '60s, when the North fixes them.
Lots of Europeans come to America because Europe sucks. They have some sort of incident there, and America makes world peace with the League of Nations, but we mess it up because we're racist against the Japanese.
Then World War II happens. Asia suddenly exists, and consists of China, Japan, and Russia. Europe has a country called Germany, and our friends the French and the English. America kills Hitler, but the Russians and Chinese want peaceful communism, but America, still somewhat racist, hates communism, and messes the world up. Korean War is ignored, Vietnam is because we're racist against Vietnamese. Civil rights makes America un-racist, though, and now we're the best nation in the world.

tl; dr America is the most racist country in the world. Every war America has ever fought was out of racist motivation, except for World War II.
This is California, by the way, other states (read:damn racist Southeners) might have it different.

I live in the midwest of America. We learn mostly about the pilgrims and pioneers and folk tales and such in elementary. In middle school 6th grade we learn world geography and european history 7th grade is U.S. government 8th grade is U.S. History and in high school you take 2-3 trimesters of U.S. History (mainly learning about colonization and industrialization in America, the Native Americans, America's affairs with other countries like the Spanish American war, WWI, "The Roaring 20's" of America, and WWII. You also take a separate class for World History, and separate classes for world geography are required for graduation from high school.

America is just as racist as some European countries and most Asian countries (especially Japan).
Spanish-American war -> Cuba was fighting for independence and we helped them
WWI -> America had to join after Russia left the Allies, and Germany took responsibility for starting it
WWII -> kind of self explanatory, Japan bombed us and brought us into the war.

I can't speak for any of the other wars since I haven't studied them yet (inb4 underage b&)

We have no excuse for the "war on terror"

in sweden we have to study ancient history, with weight on rome,
then we get on to the vikings + the introduction of christianity and then the climb from sweden as a feudal kingdom to the point when we owned about 25%of europe
(including the ever inferior Finland) and then the slow downfall and the introduction of democracy

thats about it

Ausfag here:

Primary school was Australian/British/Indigenous Australian history.

In high school the only time we ever talked about Australia was when we were looking at WW1&2, the Great Depression, the Korea&Vietnam Wars. ie: 20th century stuff. Most of the stuff we did was focused on other countries like France, Ancient Rome & Greece, China (both modern and ancient), the UK and the USA.

Did some more Australian history at uni but that was only for a semester and I still fucking regret it lol

Im spanish.

We learned all about the greeks and romans (more romans though), went through a lot of the arab takeover and barbarian invasions. We also did a lot about the expanding empir al over the world and finally, the civil war just before WWII.

I'm from the Republic of Texas. We learned the entire history of the universe, and the human race, starting with Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, all the way through Revelation.

We also had a couple of days where we talked about George Washington and the Apple Tree, but that was in 1st grade. After that we got into the more serious stuff.

They could have done it if they were united together against the US. However they all had ancient rivalries and hatreds and spoke no common language. It was relatively easy for the US to pit most of them against one another. The fact is, the US did not wipe out its native populations, they're still there.
