Hi /trv/, I'm going to Japan all august and would like some pointers on cities I could visit on a budget, thanks!

Um...Japan has some of the most expensive cities in the world. You can cut costs by visiting hostels or ryokan, but train tickets are the opposite of affordable, so day to day travel gets pricey.

Try the more rural areas. Less urbanization means lower costs, and you'll probably find a hot spring or two.

except that travelling by train in japan is cheap for tourists.

and staying in cities is also not expensive. and yes, you should stay in Ryokan or Hostels anyway.

Always prefer Ryokan over Hotels, cause Ryokan are awesome and Hotels are just Hotels like anywhere.

So you are looking for Japan on a budget?

If you have a Rail Pass, you can use seats-only cars in night trains with a reservation for free.
Night busses might be more affordable, though, but it requires more detailed planning, and the Shinka/n/sen is awesome. Hostels are a cheap way to stay in one place.
As long as you like Japanese food, you won't need to pay much. Otherwise, be prepared to pay 3000 Yen for a Pizza. Buy your breakfast and lunch in combini, buy drinks in big bottles.
Even larger attractions don't cost much, some are even for free. 105 Yen shops are a great place to buy souveniers.
I thought, Japan was rather cheap, but the Euro might be at fault here.

The only good part of that city was the hooker who offered me 'a massage' on the street. And even that was overpriced.

First, I recommends visiting three places of near Tokyo.

kamakura.
There was a capital of the samurais of 800 years ago. Many old good simple temples exist.
If you are a fan of anime "Elfinlied", ride on "Enoden" railroad train and come down at the Gokuraku-ji station. Riding to the eno-shima also recommends you Enoden.

Hakone.
Hakone is a hot spring. If you are a fan of anime "Evangelion", you can enjoy himself further.

kawagoe.
It is one of a few cities which escaped indiscriminate bombing of the U.S. Forces. Old rows of houses are saved.

The following lands are distant from Tokyo.

oumi-hachiman.
Supposing you go to Kyoto, we will recommend you to go also here.
Old rows of houses are saved with the waterway.

nara.
South in Kyoto, Nara basin were the centers of ancient Japanese culture. Visit Nara, Ikaruga, and Asuka.

onomichi.
Supposing you go to Hiroshima, we will recommend you to go also here. Japan of last century "Showa" is here. We recommend anime "kamichu" to preparation.

hakodate, gunjyou-hachiman, hagi, yufuin, these towns are far, and not recommended.
