Down South Anonymous
Canadafag here,

I've been to the US a few times before, but I've only seen the north and west coast (California). I'm going back to the US for a trip and I would like to go somewhere down south. What location do you recommend? I know, I will sound like some sort of fucking azn tourist, but I would like somewhere that is authentically southern, not somewhere that looks like every single other major city in the US. And as a side note: somewhere where they have large, regular gun shows. That would be awesome. Any suggestions?

There's no one state that's totally redneck anymore.

Parts of Georgia (stay the fuck away from Atlanta)
Some of Texas (Major cities are a no-go)
South Carolina
Virginia
Alabama
Tennessee
Arkansas

Basically any one of the stereotypical southern states is going to have SOME real culture left, but you have to go to the right parts. Anywhere there is a major city, it's just going to be full of pissed off minorities who are either still bitter about slavery, or illegal.
As someone who's lived in the south for quite some time, I would say your best bet is to find a good spot in Georgia or Virginia. They both have parts that are staggeringly beautiful.

Anywhere in the south is going to have gun shows. They usually take place once a month, so make sure if you really want to go that you schedule accordingly.

Also, try the fucking jerky. Gun show jerky is orgasmic.

I don't think you would like a gun show, unless you really liked guns. It's not like they shoot them off or anything.

Also, I suggest Texas. Fort Worth/Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin are your best bets.

If you want a look at the Antebellum south you need to visit two cities: Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. They were spared the mass destruction of the civil war and have many of their pre-war houses left. A city like Atlanta certainly has some great things but the entire downtown isn't going to be preserved like Charlestons is.

Richmond, VA has some nice sights and my area (southwestern VA) has some gorgeous scenery in the Appalachian mountains.

To be fair you're not going to find any place in the US that doesn't have chain stores but you may notice that the south has its own particular chain stores that cater to our tastes.

Not OP, but Northerner wondering something. How come no one has mentioned Mississippi? Since that's the deep south wouldn't that be pretty authentically southern?

Hey, east Texan here. As a general rule the best scenery and the most "authentic" rural redneck Southern culture is in the hilly or mountainous areas. Appalachia, the Piedmont, the Ozarks. Large areas of sustained mountainous rural poverty will produce much fewer chain stores, chain restaurants & all that. Try West Virginia. To some extent it will be a matter of just driving around & serendipity.

The guy talking about Charleston & Savannah was right, if you want old-fashioned urban Southern culture. New Orleans has some of that also but with a whole slew of complexities & problems that you can imagine.

Good gun shows are much more regular in the big cities than the smaller towns. Most are corporate & run on a schedule. Internet is your friend for finding them. Some are crap & some are great.
