From my experience I had simply noticed that, somewhat surprisingly, people out West, particularlly in Washington, seemed a bit more distant and less friendly, even to one another, than compared to people in the Midwest. I saw it almost as a sort of Indepent, I do my own thing, get out of my way, compared to a We're a community, let's help each other out, mentality in the MW. Of course a lot of depends on whether or not you're an "outsider" I'm sure. And people all over the world can be assholes, but on the whole, it was sort of something I noticed. And it seemed odd, given the more liberal bent out west. You'd almost think they'd be more welcoming.
