My fiance and I are planning a trip to europe next spring and we're trying to draw a rough map of where we will go and plan out the dates, leaving a few days extra here and there because we're wander minds, but I was wondering where I would find better information about what to visit, eat, drink, and festivals. We will be leaving for Dublin in April or May. We plan on visiting these countries/cities in this order(The list is hardly 1/4 of the way done):
Dublin Ireland, west ireland, north Ireland, Scotland, Orkneys, Inverness Scotland, Perth Scotland, Edinburgh Scotland, Glasgow, ?, France, Brussels Belgium, Cologne German, Luxembourg Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Munich Germany, Vienna Austria, Prague Czech Republic, Leipzig Germany, Berlin Germany, ?, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, ?
If anyone knows of great places that is a must to see for a 20 year old adventure nut and his equally adventurous fiance or know of a site that would help us IE. best pubs, weekend festivals(music or arts), amazing things to see(like the Cliff of Moher that I'm dying to see), or great food that's worth the travel. Also I'm canadian incase anyone was wondering.

What the hell do you want in Leipzig? You should rather go to Hamburg, Heidelberg or maybe Dresden. Nobody wants to be in Leipzig not even its inhabitants.

I live in Norway, all I can say is, stay away from the capital!!!!It's full of drug addicts, hookers and criminal niggers/pakis. If you want to experiance the real Norway, then go the the western and northern part of Norway. I live in the northern part of Norway in Tromsø, and in the part where I live we have sun 24/7 from the end of may untill late july, it is very nice, also its good fishing options here, otherwise, its expensive as fuck, about 11 usd for a beer.

If you're anywhere near North West England on the 22nd-25th May (which you may well be), come to my village for the Chester Folk Festival. You have to pay to get into the professionals' tent, but the pubs are always full of drunken folksters. Good times...

So by the sound of it you're looking at a more adventurous trip, trying to stay away from the major conurbations etc.

As you're visiting a lot of places in the UK I think it would be a shame to leave withour visiting the Lake District; it has some of the best and most beautiful scenery in the country in one place.
I'm going this weekend with some freinds to climb England's highest mountian Scafell Pike, can't wait! Alternatively there's loads of watersports on the lakes which is also good fun.

Yawn. Most boring itinery ever. I write for travel magazines, and whilst you chose some places that aren't capitals, you onlt seem to be hitting up the Western countries. Expect to get sub standard, overpriced aything. if you want a more unusual holiday, with loads of gorgeous scenery, try these

1) One out of Scotish Highoands, Lake District or Irish countryside. All 3 are beautiful, but its just more of the same

2) Ceske Krumlov, Czech. Best/worst kept secret of Europe, and beautiful town/surrounding

3) Lake Bled, Slovenia. Mauntains, lake, forests, and cheap.

4) Slovakia. Go hiking in the mountains, or just chill. For very cheap.

5) Austria/Switzerland. Either Zell am See or Interlaken. Interlaken is good for adventure sports, and Zell am See is beautiful. But again, more of the same for both.

6) Dalmatian coast. So either Croatia, or more adventurous, Montengro or Albania. very cheap, best coasts in Europe (screw the Costa del Sol), and awesome.

7) Balkans. Go somewhere here. Inhuanly cheap, and more mountains than you can shake a stick at.

8) Romania. Just do it. No regrets.

9) Scandinavia. Go somewhere here, but doing the capitals is boring - be more adveturous and see the real country/side.

10) One city break. Maybe two of your cultural. I started out doing only cities, but you realise that folly soon after. For good cities with loads to do, and not too expensive (which rules out Paris, Barcelona and London!) would be Berlin, Vienna or Budapest. Or Belgrade. Choose two off that list, but preferably not in countries youve visited. If you go to Zell am See, don't do Vienna, etc.

In terms of Ireland, you are seriously missing out if you dont make a trip to the Town of Killarney in County Kerry and its surrounding national park.

Depending on what you call spring, the Lofoten islands in North-Norway are beatiful. If it's early spring, maybe the west coast. From Bergen to Trondheim or something like that.

Prices are generally quite high, but flights go for as little as 500kr/ 60€. Or you can get the train for 200kr/ 25€, but this takes a long time. An ok hotel will cost you the same as a plain ticket, but remeber to order in advance.

Remember, Norway is a scenic country and thats about it. There isn't insane night clubs worth mentioning or many old ruins that can compete with Paris or Rome. They do say we'we got Europe's cheapest electronics, but I'm not sure if thats adjusted for buying power or not.

You forgot Budapest ! Very nice city. Sziget festival is in summer in Budapest, but it will be difficult to get a room during that time.

Croatian coast: very very nice. Rocky coast (no beaches) but clean water. Nice people.

Greek islands...many nice ones with lots of history. Try Crete - but it's very hot in summer, recommend to go in spring.

While there, do a trip to Tel Aviv (Israel). Although technically not in Europe it is a must see. Very nice people.

France is a little bit under-represented in your list: Cannes, Hyeres, Lyon, and of course Paris.

Barcelona! Madrid! Sevilla! Granada! Visit Spain in spring, not summer (too hot).

Forget Brussels, go to Leuwen!

If you are interested to also see a smaller city in Germany I recommend Freiburg. Lots of students there.

OP, spend at least 9-12 days in Italy. Are you getting a Eurail pass?(sorry if already answered)
I lived in Italy for 3 years. I lived in Naples, which
most will say is an armpit city, and to some extent would be right, but the people and culture are much more 'traditional' italian than you'll get up north. Rome is about an hour and half north of Naples spend two or three days there. In Naples is Pomeii and Mt. Vesuvius.Plan on spending 3-5 hours there, it's huge. Most of the artifacts from there a in the National Museum in downtown Naples and there's a lot of other great works of art there too. Go to the top of Vesuvius it's neat. Also in Naples is the ruins of Cuma, kind neat and pretty, it's on the sea. DO NOT miss the Amalfi Coast. It's about an hour south of Naples. One of the most beautiful places in the world. You can take a train from Naples to Sorrento (the Circumvesuviana), spend the day there, then take the bus to the rest of the amalfi coast, stopping along the way. Positano is beatiful. Also go to some of the other small towns higher up the cliffs. You may need to take separate taxis or hike, but it's worth it. You can take the bus/train back or you can take a water taxi from Salerno and maybe Positano back up to Naples or Capri. If you spend a solid week just doing Naples and the Amalfi coast it will be time well spent and you will not regret it.
Good luck and have fun!!

Dubrovnik in Croatia is extremely beatiful, and the nature in close by Czech Republic is too. If you are an experimental person, visit Amsterdam (good English knowledge there too) and Southern places like Sicily or Rhodos (Greece) have very friendly people and fantastic food and nature. The English there is quite poor though.

In short; you can practically fo anywhere in Europe, because it's very, very diverse and if you dont like it, you can be somewhere completly different in hours.

For Ireland: One quarter of our popultion live in Dublin. Spend a good 3-4 days here, Pheonix park, museums, art galleries, Trinity College and the Book of Kells, nights out in Temple Bar (this is an area, not a pub), Stephens Green, you can find out a lot of stuff on the internet. I took 2 months travelling around Ireland, yes I live here but I wanted to do it as a tourist. Honestly, I wish I had spent more time in Dublin (I only spent 2 nights). The internet has everything you need, it's a great source of info.

Next go to Cork. Purely to see the difference between Cork and Dublin. Cork is a hell of a lot more "Irish" than Dublin, without becoming a cliche. 2-3 nights here will suffice, a day trip to Kinsale if the whether is nice, perhaps even stay down there for a night.

From Cork head west, either along the coast to see the real Ireland, or else straight to Kilarney. Kilarney is a tourist's wet dream, but any more than 3/4 days and it will just get stale. Tralee isn't too far away, and they have good museums (museum?) and the aqua dome. If you come to Tralee, you have to go to the aquadome (it's like a law or something).
>> Anonymous
>>55349

From Kilarney, head for Limerick. Not a huge amount to do here, but they have very good museums, good night life, but 2/3 nights would do it. From here you're into the wild country. The rest you can do on buses and trains, here you will need a car, an os map, and a list of B&B's. Go along the coast, Cliff of Moher, The Aran Islands, any small fishing village will be an experience. I shit you not, they will love you there. Head for Galway town, great night life, it is like 20% students (seriously) so nights out are as wild as any will be (Galway girls will drink you under the table, DO NOT under estemate their drinking power).

Galways is pretty much the end of the road, have a look along the Shannon river, you could rent a house quite cheaply in the spring for a couple of days, worth doing if it doesn't rain. Donegal is just hills and sheep, not much to see but if you're into all that wild rugged landscape stuff then this is it.

In Northern Ireland, you have a few musuems, AVOID anything even remotely political, they're boring as hell. Belfast is the only place worth going from experience.

As for Scotland, it is all the same pretty much, Edinburgh and whereever your fiance's relos come from, thats about it. Don't forget London, people say it's boring and expensive, that it may be but it is still totally worth doing, you will never go anywhere with so much history, heratige and culture in such a small place.

For the rest of your trip, don't jump between countries, each one is completely different, go from country to country, doing each one separately, this way you will get the best feel for each place and will get the most out of it.

Good luck, and most of all, be adventurous!!!
