I went to Japan with me mam as well. Here's a couple of ideas: Onsen and volcanoes in Hakone: Good walks, out in the country, onsen, cooking eggs using geothermal heat in a volcnic area. There's a big circular route you can do, up the mountains by gondola, across a lake by ship and walk back on the Tokaido road, not fogetting to pop into the tea-houses on the way. http://gojapan.about.com/od/attractioninkantoregion/a/hakoneguide.htm Suggested stay: 2-3 days.
Koga ninja village: Never got round to doing this meslf, but looks good http://koka.ninpou.jp/index.html Suggested stay: 1 day
Kyoto: Maruyama park: Huge f-off park in the East of Kyoto. The most temples... anywhere, lots of crafty shops in the south like the regional glazed pottery, kiyomizu temple, Johnny Hillwalker: If this guy is still around, take a tour. He meets outside the main station.
If you can get together with some Japanese people for new year's eve/day, DO.
Ummm... and good luck
