Ok /trv i need your help. We got this new girl from germany as a foreign exchange thing and were trying to find things in america that they dont have in germany. It was easy with the brazilian girl but with this germany girl this is tough. please help

Im a vegefag, i hate wrestling, and i weigh a buck 20, so im good there. But the brazilian girl wed go and get a bagel and shed be like "wtf is that". We cant really find anything like that for germany except ice cube dispensors on freezers.

I dont mean to be offensive but american culture isnt particularly deep. Either what you have of it has been forced down western countries throats or it was adopted from Europe.

That being said I suppose if you lived near one of them rodeo things she may not have seem them.

I didnt say it was better or worse, i wasnt trying to imply that I was just saying that there isnt really an american culture past the things that get sold off in westerm european countries. So for a dirt poor brazilian a bagel is zomg amazing but for a german there is very little to suprise.

Eh, I hosted a German exchange student for a year, once. We were already friends before she came over, though, and we'd already spent time planning things for her to experience. Off the top of my head, a rodeo, eating at one of those southern barbecue places (the ones where you have a tray and there's like a buffet thing and you can get ribs and such), a weekend trip down to New Orleans, a brown-bagged lunch of PB&Js apples and milk....

Hmmm....

Lots of different dinners and things. Beanie weenies and mac n' cheese. Mexican food. Just stuff she'd never really eaten before.

We went to lots of museums and some different parks and things.

There's not a lot of things here in America that they don't already have in Europe. But it's the little differences that make the trip worth while. Going to a McDonalds in Amsterdam is going to be a different experience than going to a McDonalds in bumfuck USA. (Not saying you should go to McDonalds, just using an example.)

Bring her to a car dealer. Seriously, Dogde Rams and shit are very rare over here. Take her to a football/baseball/Ice hockey match. Baseball would be the best because in my opinion it's the most "American" sport. Football is quite popular in europe same goes for ice hockey.

Shit already ran on the major tv-stations and, what should I say, they are quite popular here, especially Saving Private Ryan.

OP: If she (and you) like musicals, show her the broadway (if that's possible). Maybe watch Avenue Q? I really want to see it once. Monster Trucks can be cool, too (not for most girls, though). Any bars with life music around?

The reason American culture isn't the deepest in the world is because it is a young nation with multicultural roots. It's very muddled.

I have been to Germany & America many times (lived in Germany for 8 years, America for 26), and I can honestly say that the most beautiful, unique, American thing we have is the diverse/beautiful landscape.
If possible, take her on a cross-country road trip, stopping at Highway 66, Burning Man, major cities, etc, I realize this may not be possible, but it's a great experience.

The thing is that in general Germans know pretty much about the american culture because of movies, TV series, music and years of learning English. So there's hardly anything we haven't seen. We know baseball. I'm pretty sure there's also a german baseball league. It's just not popular. So it can only be about the actual experience. We do lack the cowboy culture, but there are some cowboy nuts and thus even (very very few) rodeos. But baseball and rodeos really are the least common things i guess.
Of course there are some brands we don't get here in Germany. Oreos for example or clothing from Abercrombie & Fitch.

Baseball game or Nascar race. Either one is more an "event" than a "sport" so she doesn't really have to like sports to get it. From a non-american, it is very interesting to see the real average american in his natural habitat.
Don't make an "event" out of going to wal-mart but do find an excuse to take her there. "I gotta buy X thing for Y reason." Again, americans in their natural habitat kind of thing. Plus wal-mart (the american version) is VERY american. there's a completely different feel of it in other countries and the most similar foreign equivalent would be Carrefour which is nothing like it.
Last, I hung out with a group of British students one weekend and they were dying to go to a real american shake and burger joint. When we finally went they had a blast, even getting on the jukebox and playing a ton of beach boys and the song from pulp fiction.
I'm not saying that she will be super excited and energetic about all this but I think it will really help her to see a more real side of america.

I knew some German university students who were at my college(Portland State, in Oregon). They said the things that were different in America were:

- People don't discuss politics or religion at dinner
- Movies are, ironically, more censored here. Hollywood films have more explicit versions they show overseas than in the US. They thought the US was going to be this totally crazy place, but they found it was rather more uptight.

As for other stuff I can think of:
- Ethnic food. From what I understand, they have lots of Turkish and Lebanese dudes in Germany, so they're familiar with that. And Chinese is everywhere. But they probably don't have Mexican(good stuff, not Taco Bell), Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, or Cajun.
- Honestly the US varies quite a bit by where you are, so I can't give you a clear answer. Most of the US has nice or at least interesting natural scenery, so try going to a national park or something.
- Air shows if you have them nearby. Some military bases also have museums or tours.
- Museums in general?

There really isn't much that's in America that isn't in other western countries.
>> Anonymous
OP, it would help if you told us where in the USA you are.

>>54471
>>54547
Wow, you're surprised they drink milk? Jesus, you must have been sheltered when you were in Japan. They only sell it at every grocery and convienience store. Milk has been a part of the Japanese diet since the war, maybe since the 19th century.

They do have European-style fondue in Japan. The stuff you're referring to as 'fondue with water', are you talking about Shabu Shabu or Nabemono? Both are more like stew or boiled meat than fondue.

As for food most of them wouldn't like - root beer, maybe guacamole.

Food you should introduce - Thai, Vietnamese, Indian. They have Chinese and Korean places in Japan, but not many other Asian places.

Thanks for the info. Yea, I basically got all my info from my teacher who's pretty old (and American) so I guess she was a bit out of touch even though she had lived in Japan for years.

Yea I was talking about Shabu Shabu, and I kind of figured they'd have Euro-fondue as well. Interesting note though, I did see a lot of restaurants serving dishes with guacamole/avocado but I don't think it was anything close to authentic Mexican cuisine. Funny you should mention root beer, literally 5 minutes ago I was drinking some and realized I never saw any root beer in Japan, vending machines, convenience stores, restaurants, nada.
Good call on Indian food, there are some great places in Chicago for that.

It really depends what part of the country your in. Although "National" foods and music traditions are often seen outside of the country you'll be hard pressed to find much authentic regional cuisine/music in any of the European countries, Germany included.

- the gun culture

Yea I'll consider it but it is kinda pricey and I'm not sure how comfortable my exchange student would be in that kind of situation. I'll have to see how things are going towards the end of her stay if I want to take her out to nice restaurant which would probably imply a date at least in her mind. Not that that would be a bad thing, but I don't want her to stress over stuff (social customs are very different in Japan, a fancy dinner for 2 could be awkward for her).

Potbelly would probably be a safe bet though =P. FYI, I live in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area so there's lots of quality, but casual restaurants that would probably be good.
