I went last July, let me tell you a few things.

Definitely a great place to visit, especially if you're into metal.

If you want a cheap, excellent, and close to the centre type hotel/hostel, I'd reccomend Academica hostel. Stayed for about 12 days with another guy and we split the cost, each of us paid about 200 euros for the whole stay(which is a steal if you're in the center of helsinki).

Take a ferry to estonia, it's definitely worth it while you're there.

Go see Suomenlinna, it's an interesting site.

Can't remember anything else atm.

Girls rock, lots of bars and diffrent kind of. Clubs in the central, cheap and various in the Kallio district(go try Kustaa Vaasa, or other with young people inside). All kinds of food, but expensive, we are used to eat at home. Summer is the best time to go, weather is quite perfect, people are more open and happy... in the winter everyones tired and depressed. Finland is the MOST racist country i've ever lived in, and i hear people talking shit about suuntautuminen, neekeri (finnish for 'nigger') and saying stuff like "what are they doing in our country" all the time, assuming i can't hear or understand them (because their language is SO complicated, what with the 500 or so words you need to learn to get through 99% of all conversations, and total lack of grammar)

If you've ever been to Finland for more than a week and you don't see it for what it is, then you're so blind and stupid it hurts.

Uptight doesn't even begin to describe the ambience here, and everyone looks down on everyone else, especially foreigners.

The women are all either REALLY really stupid sluts (puts skanky english bitches to shame) or, if they are even slightly intelligent they are SERIOUS princesses. (well excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me)

They also don't have souls.

But I am just here researching automatic translation, consulting for a large company. And I prefer the girls a little younger, if you catch my drift.

Eurofags are so clueless it hurts. Finland is ok, but it's a nightmare if you don't like false people

Not entirely. As a Winlandfag, I can attest to this, as I see it daily - but there's varying shades to this: Winfags are very rough around the edges, and as a result, have a rather... odd sense of humour. We call everyone with a slight tan nigras, and hassling one's friends in every humiliating and painful way possible is topical enough to be compared to discussing the weather. It's very hard to tell between genuine hostility and funning even for a local. If you plan on visiting, come during midsummer, and check the rock festivals. Prepare for heavy drinking, there's not much else to do here. Good places to visit would be Molly Malone's for an international staff and clientele as well as bands every night around the year, and bar Sling In in mid-city for cocktails and hot chicks. I'm not the nightclub type, though, they tend to collect snooty teenagers.

tl;dr - get drunk or gtfo

Well, somehow true - these comics by milla paloniemi have gotten very, very popular in finland. I bought a album of these today and it was already 4th edition. it doesn't sound much but it is, for a finnish comic albums. These are also very new.

Helsinki is very safe and the Finns are all extremely friendly. No language problems, as most Finns are near-fluent in English. Finnish food has been called the worst food in Europe; it's definitely better than England but it's not France. There's really nice shopping and everything is within walking distance, but many nightclubs have self-imposed age minimums of 19-23. In the summer, the weather is really nice and it stays light out for like 21 hours.
>> noko
I've been to the Vaantaas (sp?), Helsinki airport. Seemed small and dull, but in general Finnish people are made of win.

For a person who's never had an adventure, yes. For someone who's travelled a bit, it's just plain old boring. Outdoorsy types may enjoy it, but in the end it's nothing more than driving through a whole lot of nowhere.

>>8056

As for the age limits, that's very true - Finns start drinking by the line at a very early age, from 12 to 14 yo at the average, and not meaning a beer or two but roaring puking swearing fighting drunk once a week-style. People usually get over this phase in some years, but most are still quite phenomenally retarded in terms of drinking savviness at the advent of their legal drinking age. Thus, to make a nightclub even remotely tolerable, there's no options apart from a high underage b& limit and mean bouncers.

Except, of course, for not being inhabited by Americans. Thus, the beer isn't that bad, the people are generally well-educated and polite, and the place in general is a safe and pleasant place to visit. But then again, for an American tourist, it's more likely there isn't such a place on earth.

I think this place is pretty boring. The winters suck (Cold, eeewww) and people aren't as friendly as in... Spain? Most finns like drinking. A lot. And most of them start when they're around 13 years old. And most of them aren't very talkative or anything but they're not trying to be rude, it's just the way they are. Finland is pretty safe place to be in because there aren't so many armed robberies, murderers or thieves. I'd recommend this place if you like concerts, heavy metal, drinking or something lame like hiking or fishing. But hey, the girls are gorgeous! :D

No, I am not lying. Picture is a proof(for other Finns at least).

Nevertheless, Finland is very friendly to foreigners. Most of those us who live in the small towns become very excited when a foreigner comes to their town. Of course, this all depends on the people you meet. Still, if you aren't russian or overly black, you can expect polite behaviour. The sad fact is that we have serious prejudices against Russians. If you are black and can speak clear english they probably won't mind you.
