henry Rollins did, check out his live from new york stand up act and you will hear about is rather colorful journey upon the Trans-Siberian Railroad, if you dont want to bother with the download ill just give you a small tid-bit, ever hour or so they will stop the train and you will hear alot of banging and clanging, dont worry about it, its just somone manually cleaning the toilet pipes..... .... enjoy your trip

Trans-Siberian rocks. If you have time i'd try to stop off for a day or two at some random places in Siberia, assuming this is in the summer of course. The longest i was on the train without getting off was two and a half days, pretty sure i would have gone crazy if i had done the entire week-or-whatever in one go.

From what I've read about eastern Russia is that they act like the USSR never fell and it's a bit worrisome.
Food is supposedly better on the train when it splits into China.
Also been advised to have several tracksuits in my wardrobe in order to blend in with the locals.

This is not as awesome as you think it is.

If I did the same thing the OP was doing as part of a larger trip, how easy would it be to catch a flight/train from Moscow to another major European city? Thinking about heading south to Greece and Turkey before continuing on westward. If your answer is gb2/n/, that's fine too.

OP here, I've been considering this as the first part of my trip around the world. After Moscow head to the Black Sea, Istanbul, stop in Egypt then get the hell out just so I can say "Yeah I was in Africa" then head to Sicily where most of my family is from and stay there for ninety days before heading up to the UK, touring it a bit then going to Ireland and sailing to NYC.

Do you actually live in Anchorage, or is that just where your flight to Tokyo takes off?

From what I have seen, cheremetrevo (sp?) is the only major airport in Russia.

Enjoy Vladivostok, it's polluted as hell and I would advise against it. if you can, spend a lot of time on the Kamchatka peninsula, it's a beautiful place.
