http://www.juyoh.co.jp/ 3200JPY per night.
The hostel is located in Minami-Senju four subway stops from Akihabara(~15mins, Minami-Senju->Shibuya ~30-40mins.) on the Hibiya-line. The rooms are quite small and the neighborhood is really boring, but you're not going to spend that much time there anyway.

minami senju is hilarious for nearly the entire town being old people who start drinking at 10am, many of which are without shirts.

does it matter where in tokyo? new koyo is dirt cheap--

Juyoh is actually not in Minami-Senju, it's in Sanya. It's place with a very interesting history if you bother to learn anything about it. If you actually talk to any of the "old people who start drinking at 10am" rather than laugh at them, you would find that they're among the most interesting people you will find in Japan.

Also, it's not a hostel. It bears no resemblance to a hostel other than there are a lot of foreigners there. It's was originally a doya or lodging for day laborers, but since the market crash most of them have become too poor and have become homeless- those are the people you see living under tarps along the nearby Sumida river. Now it's what in Japanese is called a "business hotel," basically a very cheap, very basic hotel that provides little to no amenities and is geared toward single (usually male) guests.

I quite like the Otsuka (or Ohtsuka) Station Hotel.

The one hotel I stayed at was Tokyo Green Hotel in Ochanomizu. 8600yen a night for a single. Western-style rooms. Comfortable and perfect if you're travelling alone. It's VERY close to Akihabara and Akihabara station, Ishimaru Denki was visible from my window. Their English sucks balls but they were friendly and accomodating. Courtesy high-speed wired internet but no actual computer. Bring your own laptop. Everything the typical weeaboo needs for a comfortable trip. No more, no less. I thought the price was right but it's not quite as cheap as the hostels that people are posting in this thread.

The rooms were a bit small, but this is Japan. They're perfect for just one person.
Some other people took pretty representative photos and put them on flickr

Right across the street is a 7-eleven. Down the street is a post office with an ATM. Watch your head in the hallways if you're over 6 feet tall.

i, too, have stayed here. it is the best hotel ever invented because it's cheap and near two JR stations and a 5 minute walk away from Akihabara.

as you walk out the front door (pictured), hang a right, keep walking past the post office (which has an ATM in it), cross a street, cross the bridge, cross another street and you'll be at an alley that goes off at an angle. walk up the alley and you're in Akihabara.

from here you can walk over to Akihabara station and catch that to Tokyo station. and on the way back from Tokyo station, get off at Ochanomizu station and walk down the hill, hang a right, and you're back at the hotel.

the hotel also has hyperactive maids and free green tea machines in the hallways. and you can order a massage. though with all the thrilling excitement of tokyo just minutes away, i can't imagine what kind of person would spend time and money on that.

the 7-11 really is right across the street.

a view from the room.

that yellow sign is a hospital. don't be surprised to hear the faint sound of ambulance sirens at various times. (but honestly, it never got to the point i was bothered by it)

if you're lucky enough to get the other side of the hotel, the view is even better.

I think I'm sold on this hotel! It looks really cute and cheap and has a pretty good location.

8600 yen per night for a single is NOT cheap.

How much should you expect to pay? You can't find a decent hotel in Manhattan for that price, so I figured it was a good deal.

depending on when you book, and for how long, you can get some really good rates out of it.

there's others that are cheaper, sure, but it's all a balance between what's cheap and what's good. for the location, services, and price, it's very attractive.

also you can order censored porn on the tv.

anyway, here's a quick map of the area based on what i remember. i wish i'd had something like this when i went there.

I stayed there once. It's alright, and if you book through places like Rakuten, you can get lower prices. You'd might as well go with something like the Otsuka Station Hotel though, unless you want to be in walking distance of Akiba.

Sweet! What's the Family Mart? Do they sell children there?

I was put up in a suit at the Akasaka Prince Hotel once, when the All-Japan Bread Association was making the world's longest hot dog, and I had to be on-hand to narrate the documentary as it was filmed. It's the nicest fucking hotel I've ever been in (but, I'm a cheapfag who would never pay for a hotel that nice).

Otsuka Station Hotel has prices ranging from 4500yen-6500yen for a single. It's a 3 minute walk from Otsuka Station, which is on the Yamanote Line, and thus will probably be convenient to every place you'll want to go, as a weeaboo.

Also a block from the Tokyo Scientology Center, if you're into chanology funtimes.

Someone mentioned Sakura hotels earlier.

Holy shit, 2500 yen rooms (That's like a $705/month rent!). And they don't look like ass either. What's so bad about it? It looks like it's fairly downtown Tokyo too.

It's in the slum, but it's a slum by Japan standards. It's probably the nicest slum you'll ever find.

I stayed at the Central Hotel Kanda and also the Tokyo Green Hotel Ochanomizu. The single room at Central is a slight bit larger. Also, the Central Hotel is just a 1 minute walk from Kanda station (the Tokyo Green is quite a distance from Ochanomizu Station). The JR Yamanote, Chuo-Rapid, Keihin-Tohoku lines and Tokyo Metro Ginza subway line stop here making it really convenient to get around.

They use variable pricing at this place where the rates from Tues-Thurs are the most expensive and decreases from Fri to Sun. The single A w/o bath (meaning you use the public bath) for example is \6,825 Tues-Thurs but \5460 on Fri, \5000 on Sat, and just \4725 on Sun. The single B with bath costs around \600 more for each day. For a business hotel located this close to the Yamanote, it is one of the most best values around (which is why rooms tend to fill up quickly here).

Another place I use is Toyoko Inn as they have chains all over the entire country. Prices are reasonable and most also located close to train stations. The Shinagawa Takanawa branch is just a few minutes walk from Shinagawa Station and nightly rates for a single is \6800.

Finally, if you want something that is more apartment like, Tokyu Stay is really nice. The prices are a bit higher but some of the locations are still price competitive. I stay here on longer term visits because the mini-kitchen and washer/dryer come in handy. Plus free breakfast and drink is included in the price (stay at a branch that has a Jonathans since their drink bar has everything including freshly ground and brewed espresso).
