I have a friend in Turkey who has said I'm free to visit whenever I like. The problem is, as much as I enjoy trvl, I'm not sure Turkey is keen on Americans visiting the country. I'd never go by myself, and even with a guide I am put off to the idea.

Will I be missing out on anything if I elect to go elsewhere?

I like doner kebabs. And that's about all for what I like about Turkey.

im from Turkey. there is no hate against any races here, you can be sure =) we just hate bush (most of us, at least)
I can't say that heres the safest country but here we live... especially Istanbul is very safe if you have a good guide... if you enter the "dark" areas... im not sure =)
if you have a friend here, i think there is no reason not to come, except the cost, of course =)

What? People love sucking tourist dick here

Antalya - arguably the best place for the money to go in the summers. Weather is always good and the sea is always clear and warm.

Ankara - the capital which some tourists fall into the trap thinking it's interesting. Virtually no history and wannabe-stalinist architecture, landlocked... It's a waste of your time for touristic purposes, but hey you can stay in my apartment.

Istanbul - the most populous city in Europe, with great historical value. A truly beautiful city in which you'll probably get ripped off by taxi drivers and/or giftshops unless you're careful.

There is also Izmir, but honestly if I wanted to see the Aegean, I'd go to Greece.

And now for some general protips for a foreigner who has mental issues to the level that he/she wants to stay in turkey;

1) Pork: Far more expensive here than beef, since durkas don't eat it and it's regarded as rich tourist food. I personally only eat it abroad due to ridiculous prices here. But hey, at least you can get cheeseburgers and shrimps. Fucking Israel starved me...

2) Restaurants: If you think the food is too cheap, it probably is. Look for a restaurant that has lots of moustached men and hairy women inside - if it caters to tourists, it is for ripping off people with "no taste". Also, McDonald's, Burger King etc. are regarded as middle-class places here, so the service isn't concentration-camp style like in the US, but prices are inflated so accordingly.

3) Getting ripped off: If you are a tourist, you are a walking money bag for some. While this place is certainly is not the best destination for sex tourism, if you really want to do it and can't bed a local girl (who are reputed to be jumping on foreign cock) and go to a club etc. to get some ukrainian prostitutes, chances are you'll end the night with blue balls and significantly less money

Why else would I bother?

PS: Don't try to smuggle drugs, and get imprisoned and raped.

You know, in 1960 the prime minister was deposed and tried in a military court. He was sentenced to execution due to his role in orchestrating the pogrom against minorities (though, of course, there were other reasons too).

turkey is nice, avoid bodrum unless you want tourist party town and fucking with russian secretaries on all inclusive vacations. highly recommend the boomerang hostel in SELCUK for being inexpensive, clean, with an english speaking proprietor who can show you where the good beaches are. also pamukkale and the tavertine cliffs are nice, but, again, Russians. goddamn them.

I like the variety it offers. The Black Sea coast is like the Scottish highlands in terms of climate and the landscape. The southern Aegean coast is pretty much like Greece, as you would expect. The Mediterranean coast less so, but beautiful beaches and whatnot nonetheless. The East is barren wasteland, the Southeast is desert and in the middle is the steppes.

If you want to check out something cool. I think there is a restaurant at the top of the Genoese tower in Istanbul.
>> Anonymous
>>3926
Which is called Galata Tower these days, just so you don't go around asking people for a Genoese Tower only to have them looking blankly at your face.
>> Anonymous
>>3938
I think they would figure it out eventually, though you might travel some unrelated places in the process.

Which may not really be a downside. There are some very nice old neighborhoods around there, though it's being overrun by artsy types and losing its authenticity. Balat and the surrounding areas at the neck of the historic peninsula are still pretty much intact though.

I've been to Turkey last year, I liked it but I expected somewhere a lot more exotic, middle-eastern. It was slightly boring, eastern-euro style.
