Hi /trv/.

I'm an Aussie thinking of spending a weekend in NZ somewhere soon. Which would be better to go to, Auckland or Christchurch? Also what is there to do in each city?

i've never heard of either, but just judging by the name "christchurch", i'd stay far far away.

lol, but seriously any NZers here to offer opinions?

NZer here. Depends on what interests you. It's not so much the cities you go to for tourist attractions (though both cities have their fair share) this side of the ditch.

Personally I'd go to Auckland if you could afford it.

Hmm new zealander here i think that you should stay away from auckland if you are going to be driving, good nightlife and such but bad traffic and to many asians you could go to Rotarua for the skiing and the hot pools, but it stinks like rotten eggs. Nothing to do in hamilton except for the V8s coming up, Wellingtons ok , you could go to Te papa but thats about it

i would try the South island

Aucklander here. Stay AWAY :P

Auckland is a little big city wanna be, if you come to NZ, the beautiful scenery is what you want to be looking at. CHCH is a beautiful beautiful city, and only a few hours drive from queenstown which is the tourist capitol on NZ (some say of the sothern hemesphere.) close to the southern alps too, which are bloody beautiful themselves. Also, a drive to milford sound is a must do while on holiday here.

Yeah, go to milford sound. Hire a commodore or something (i would recommend a turbo subaru) and you won't ever regret driving the milford road.

Wellington here. Go to the South Island, don't even bother with the North.

Ok, I'm an NZer and a first time browser of /trv/, here's what I think, north to south.
Auckland: Offers nothing over any other large city.
Hamilton: Nothing to see here.
Tauranga/Mt Maunganui: Beautiful, coastal towns.
Rotorua:
- Luge at Skyline (skyline.co.nz)
- Geothermal attractions: Boiling mud can be seen in the middle of town, free of charge. More geothermal stuff can be seen at local attraction Te Puia, but at a price (tepuia.co.nz).
- Agrodome (agrodome.co.nz)
- other stuff I forgot
Taupo: Don't like the place much, but it's a small town in close to Mt Ruapehu and Mt Tongariro (sp?). Google those two, Tongariro Crossing is meant to be great.
Wellington: Heaps of stuff to do, great city. Te Papa museum is well worth visiting.
South Island: Someone's already mentioned Milford Sound. I haven't been to the south island in some time, so I can't really comment here.
Welp, have fun.

Skiing in Rotorua? Definitely not.
