as a joke, I told the translator that I would only accept the contract if they threw in round trip first class tickets on JAL

I was forgetting, of course, that japanese suits are utterly humorless. there was much japanese harrumphing on the other end of the speaker, and then my translator informed me that the tickets would be available under my name at LAX

in retrospect, I probably should have just asked for another 5 grand, because JAL first class is better than my apartment :(

also I think after JAL stewardesses turn 28 they jettison them into the atmosphere because I've never seen one that couldn't pass for a demure 16

Attempting to break the ice with jokes when conducting business over an international phone line with people who don't speak your language fluently is always good for lulz.

I asked the stewardess for a pepsi. She returned 5 minutes later with the entire first class serving staff, who all bowed, while she profusely apologized about them not having pepsi. I tried to apologize myself, which only made them bow deeper and apologize even more profusely for having inconvenienced one of their most respected first class passengers. In an attempt to exonerate JAL from the shame they have suffered, my entire wine and sake tab on the flight would be complimentary.

Note to self: Ask for Pepsi on JAL

I don't believe you have ever flown internationally. Cute story though, keep it coming.

I knew that spirits were complimentary from the start. I just didn't want to risk a mass seppuku by pointing it out.

nice!
only time i've ever been not in economy was when i was bumped to business on a hanoi->seoul Asiana flight. Unfortunately, I was feeling under the weather, so I couldn't enjoy the dinner and beer.

The man beside me had like, 8 bowls of ramen though, which was bizarre.

JAL food always feels off. it's good, but it seems like a really good imitation of real international food. don't feel bad taking the japanese meal, all gaijin do it. and all the native take the international meal because they want to seem sophisticated.

Ask them what they recommend as to international or japanese for an uncomfortable stare into absolutely uncomprehending alien eyes.
