The grid layout of the city looks to me like Sapporo.

Tokyo is just a clusterfuck of highways.

Why is Japan so fucking urbaniiiiized.

130 million people in a land area the size of California. That's very mountainous at that.

It's actually not all urbanized, there's quite a bit of rural land and smaller towns are shrinking and dying off as the population ages and people cluster around the cities. They also sneak agriculture in, well, everywhere. If there's a plot of land they can put a rice paddy in, they'll put it in there. But the big cities are, well, BIG.

1. The Tokyo Tower is 300m and the tallest structure in the city, that, clearly, it not.
2. The area around the Tower is more densely built up.
3. The areas in the distance are also more built up - we should see more highrises of some sort.
4. There are no mountains that close to Tokyo.
5. The streets around it aren't so perfectly gridded.
6. It doesn't look at all like the Tokyo Tower.

Also, Japan's forestry management program is second to none. Despite its high population, Japan has managed to set up a far more sustainable forestry and logging industry than any other country. Currently about three quarters of Japan's land is forested. The U.S. could learn a thing or two about forest management from Japan.
