So let this thread be about China.
I have a fellow student who is from China studying here. We have been talking about a lot of subjects I was interested in, such as Japan/China, Tibet/China and Taiwan/China.
I was baffled by answers she gave me, like in her eyes Japanese are worth less than other human beings, she was astonished about the fact that China invaded another country and heard about the war against Tibet for the first time. When I mentioned the conflict with Taiwan, she totally sealed her mouth off, saying I had no right to judge them and she wouldn't want to talk with me about it.
Well, she completely lost it when I refered to Mao as a dumbass. From the look she gave me, you couldn't say if I had just slapped her or spit in her face.

I don't really get it. After all she's an educated person, studying here should mean something at least. But glorifying a mass murderer and holding him up in such an high honor gives me the creeps.
So what is the general view of the Chinese towards Mao and those conflicts? Is she an exception? Or is the Chinese system still doing a damn fine job in making it's inhabitants believe in whatever it wants?
I know the Party is still very strong with censorship everywhere, oppression and no opposition. But that severe?

So let this thread be about Israel.
I have a fellow student who is from Israel studying here. We have been talking about a lot of subjects I was interested in, such as Egypt/Israel, USA/Israel and Palestine/Israel.
I was baffled by answers she gave me, like in her eyes Arabs are worth less than other human beings, she was astonished about the fact that Israel invaded another country and heard about the war against Lebanon for the first time. When I mentioned the conflict with Islam, she totally sealed her mouth off, saying I had no right to judge them and she wouldn't want to talk with me about it.
Well, she completely lost it when I refered to Ariel Sharon as a dumbass. From the look she gave me, you couldn't say if I had just slapped her or spit in her face.

I don't really get it. After all she's an educated person, studying here should mean something at least. But glorifying a mass murderer and holding him up in such an high honor gives me the creeps.

The Chinese government is not made of people. It's a faceless Evil that oppresses anyone with a soul. Certainly a wealthy urbanite with the means to study abroad would have no vested interest in maintaining the status quo. Since she's educated, her parents must be members of the opposition, rather than the Communist Party itself.

That's great, champ. The people still haven't tried to overthrow their oppressive government.

I can honestly see China becoming democratic very, very, very gradually. It's also the only hope they have of their "peaceful reunification" dream with Taiwan.

Also, when that happens they need to go back to the old Republic of China flag with the badass sun. The Soviet looking thing they have now is gay.

the point was, every nation represses thought against its interests

for more example, see the BAWWWW COMMIES rants from a select group of "free" americans.

QFT.

It's all relative. My fellow Britfags think they're 'educated'; they like to spout off about Mao, and Stalin, and GW Bush, while ignoring our own bloody past. Do they even know about ANY of the atrocities committed in running our empire? "oh lol, we neva studied dat in skewl. we only did hitler and vietnam and the romans. lol!"

Every nation on Earth has a bloody past. That's how they're born. A select group of individuals with power start off with high ideals and then the fucking rats scurry in looking for power. That's why empires decline. The kinds of people interested in change usually aren't interested in power and thus form new nations/etc but don't maintain them. Poeple intested in power wait until these new bodies have formed and then move in. See Rome, US, Jews in Pre-WW2 German.

Just like anywhere else, I think it depends on the person. While visiting China, I met one guy who was "Chairman Moa this, Chairman Moa that". Another person I met couldn't wait to get her ass to the US, but couldn't get a Visa. But maybe region also has to do with it. There was a lot more Chairman Mao merch in Beijing- Not so much as I traveled south.

I have had several friends from China. They have presented both positive and negative views of their government. The friends I made at school who were from wealthy families always took a very proud view of their government and would hear nothing against the statement that Taiwan was rightfully theirs, China has minimal censorship which is for the good of the people, ect.
The Chinese I met at work were poor illegals. As far as I recall, they all had a very negative view about the ruling powers in China and expressed a lot of anger about the mentioned topics.
Well, there you go. The fact is that China has had many improvements in recent years, their economic conversion was a major shift in direction for them... and if we look at history from a non-sensationalist point of view, we can see that, for example, Mao did many good things as well as took part in very bloody things. China has seen many worse monsters over its history, recent and ancient, than anything in place today. But one might as well argue with a super patriot/lefist about Hiroshima, vietnam, Iraq, ect... few people want to dig through actual books (plural, lol) and compare sources, weed out bias, and so on.
