Ive lived in london my whole life , and its very livable if you know how. heres my tips
1) dont bother buying/renting a car. congestion charge ,gas ,and parking make london very difficult to use a car , but this is more than compensated for by the public transport ,which (despite some problems) is world class compared to most US cities.
2)rent in the Suburbs. The commute wont be pleasent , but the rent can be a 3rd cheaper (my room with access to bath and kitchen is approx $800 a month), and you dont really need to worry about crime as long as you stay away from the district line. even then , violent crime is no more prevlent than in the US
3) dont expect US standard of housing. It just doesnt exist in london. $1000 a month will get you perhaps a mouldy 1 bedroom flat , or more likely a room in a house youll share with 4/5 others.
4)food is less expensive if you cook it yourself. most Londerners do not eat out on a very regular basis , its far cheaper to cook your own , most supermarkets (which in most places will be whithin 10min walk) can provide everthing youll need
5) PARTY !!!, unlike Most US cities, london has a very vibrant 25hr culture and theres always somthing to do at night , with 24hr buses allowing people in and out at night
Hope you enjoy my city!!
