alright, border question.

i'm a 20 year old u.s. citizen going to school in montreal. when i fly home for christmas next month, i want to bring back some booze for my friends back home as christmas gifts (legal to buy up here, illegal down there, etc etc that whole ridiculous thing).

is it legal for me to purchase alcohol here and just bring it with me? i assumed i could just buy a bunch duty-free while i was still in canada and then fly home, but one person has told me they won't sell me alcohol at duty-free shops in the airport if i'm under 21 and flying to the states. can't really carry it on, because, you know, alcohol is a liquid. i didn't want to have to check any luggage either, but i guess i could if it comes to that.

suggestions?

Sorry for being irrelevant to your questions, but are you attending McGill?

I'm a US citizen as well, and I've been thinking of going up there for school as well.

flying united, gotta pay for even one checked bag. and i'm only home for a couple weeks, so it doesn't make much sense to pack a huge suitcase when i can just carry on a small duffel.

(tldr i'm cheap?)

not a bright idea it'll show up on the scanners and stuff
1) it's a liquid
2) your birthdate is an easy check in your passport
3) depending on how the tsa agent is on the day you will either have it confiscated AND have the police called or just have it confiscated

not worth it

don't listen to this fag. check the bag and you are fine. no one checks that shit and since you are a us citizen the border patrol coming back ain't gonna hassle you.

if he puts it in the checked luggage he will be fine. if he tries to carry it on the plane he will be fucked.

except he's bringing booze back for friendS so he's going to be bringing more than one bottle and says he doesnt want to check luggage, so his entire checked luggage will be a bag of booze. TSA "random" checks are gonna love that one not to mention customs if he fails to declare it.

yup, it should be fine. i brought back some remy from France when I was 19 in my checked nigger, no one did or said anything to me about it.

You're 20 and you and your friends don't have fake IDs?

Have you thought about mailing it home?

After a trip to Europe we had left over booze (hard to imagine, I know) and wanted to bring it home but eventually decided it wasn't worth the possible hassle. In Canadian law if you purchased it legally in another country you must be able to legally purchase it in the first province you set foot in. Since in SK it's 19 I couldn't but if I had landed in AB, MB or ON then departed to SK I would have been fine. Pretty sure the laws are the similar in the U.S. so you may not be able to bring it home.

OP here, thanks for all the input. i've talked to several IRL people and they've given the same kind of answers. better safe than sorry, i guess. which means i'll probably be mailing it.

if you have a diplomatic passport you can just bypass having your bags scanned
