I have dreamed of visiting damascus since I was a child. Can you get by there without much knowledge of arabic and what's the travel situation like in syria? I'm not worried that I'll get kidnapped and beheaded or anything ridiculous like that but I have heard that there's been a lot of tension and anti-western sentiment in the area since the israel-lebanon war.

I've been there... it's an interesting place, the old city is amazing. I'd be cautious and probably avoid walking alone a lot at night, but it's still safer than Lima or Rio. You should learn basic arabic phrases, NUMBERS (they have different numerals) and some etiquette. Stay awat from the iraq border and you should be OK.

... and here's me all this time thinking that we used Arabic Numerals.

We use the Arabic numeral system, but the numerals themselves are a bastardization of the original Arabic numerals. They correspond one to one though, so no big deal.
