Hey, /trv/ - I'm taking this route from the Chicago area towards Flagstaff, AZ through Santa Fe and Tucson.

Is there anything or anywhere I shouldn't pass up on my road trip?

I have done that trip. Its pretty much midwest until you hit Kansas then its otherworldly for a while. OK and TX are kind of lose, especially Amarillo, so just keep rolling.

Once you get in NM, things get interesting. Yes Santa Fe is nice. Las Vegas NM is more historic and worth stopping at, but its off your track.

On the way south from Sante Fe, get off the main highway and follow the old 2 lane to Datil to see the Very Large Array. Then down near Elephant Butt you can see the valley where the Trinity site is located, the atomic testing area. You can't get in but in the hills to the west of the highway, you can see the whole valley. There is an awesome road from Truth or Consequences area across the mountain to Silver City, one of my favorite drives of all time. There are supposed to be hot springs there in the Mogollon mountain area but we didn't stop. Down by Lordsburg and the Mexican border its pretty much flat desert and boring however for a midwesterner it is interesting. Bisbee is awesome. This tour is one of my all time favorite driving tours.

One other route you could do to get the Route 66 effect is to do Hwy 54 from Wichita to Tucumcari. This will take longer. The scenery is not dramatic but it is an old historic road.

The drive on highway 191, which is just west of the border with NM another great tour.
