I'm going to Africa as part of a semi-round the world trip with a mate from work. On the way round we're going to South Africa and Tanzania. South Africa is a safe bet (we're going to Johannesburg), and my boss says that Tanzania is great for tourists. Just wondering what the /trv/ perspective is on Tanzania.

tl;dr have any /trv/lers been to Tanzania?

I went to Zanzibar, an island just off the Tanzanian coast, part of the country. Lovely city there, Stonetown. Bustling like you never find in the west. Didn't see much of the mainland, but it was very pleasant. People are friendly enough, and it's easy to have a great time.

I can't stress this enough about Johannesburg and South Africa in general (fucking shithole of race-segregation that it still is), but BE CAREFUL. Seriously. Watch what cabs you get into. My brother and a mate got dumped in a bad part of town by their cabbie, and they were promptly mugged by his mates. So take care. Might want to get one of those under-your-shirt travellers pouches for your passport and papers.

But Tanzania's lovely. Shame about the rural poverty, though.

Well there's your problem. Seriously, going there is a terrible idea. You WILL get mugged, you WILL get treated like shit because you arn't black, and you WILL regret going there. I did, I went there for a two day three night vacation, and I regretted it ever since.

Care to name the country you went to? They're all different. If you go to Sudan or somewhere you deserve what you get. But if you go to Ghana or South Africa you'll be fine.

This man's an idiot, basing an entire continent on two or three days.

Africa offers some really amazing experiences. You'll feel out of place as it's radically different, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks for telling me this, I'll be careful.

Good man. It's not that bad, but it's better to be safe.
