Sup /trv/?

I'm going to be renting a room next year in San Francisco while I go to school, but I have no idea what to expect. I think I'll like it since I'm a liberal artfag, but I'm poor and will be living there solo.

Any experiences with this city you could share?
Suggestions? Hm?

Poor, you say? LOL see you in Oakland instead.

The room I'm staying in is pretty cheap..
Should I be expecting wallet-rape otherwise?
>> Anonymous
Don't get me wrong, it's a cool little town but it's a financial rape-over. I'd suggest trying to really conjure up solid plans on how to spend.

lrn2cook, shop in thrift stores, costco is your best friend, craigslist is your second best friend.

Thank you.

Is crime pretty bad there?
I mean, any worse than any other city?
A friend told me there are a lot of gangs..

less crime than la or oakland. its a relatively safe city, and theres really no "bad neighborhoods". suburbfags always blow these crime things out of porportion. obviously its not like you can leave your car unlocked overnight, but if youre smart, you will be safe. if youre worried about crime, go live in a burb.

Statistically, Los Angeles is actually safer than San Francisco in the rates of homicide, robbery, assault, burglary, theft, and auto theft. SF has lower rates of rape and arson though.

However, in practice, I'd say SF will be safer, as the crime is more heavily skewed towards a few incredibly dangerous areas, while LA's is more evenly dispersed.

Regardless, both are pretty safe, and so long as you're not living in Hunter's Point and/or a fucking retard, you'll be fine.

Just curious OP, how much are you paying in rent?

Otherwise, normal things you'll need like food, transit, clothes, electronics, drugs, etc. are no more expensive than any other US city.
>> Anonymous
>>72247
If you know where to shop SF is really cheap in terms of food, merchandise, etc

It's just the rent in most/all places is ridiculous.

The public transport in SF is excellent value, get a BART pass and a bus pass they're dirt cheap if you get a lot of use out of them. Owning a car without private parking isnt really advised, plus you can get around fine on the bus or BART.

BART is much faster than MUNI, but also much more expensive and pretty useless when it comes to getting around SF proper (serves the inner suburbs more) unless you live near one of the 4 stations between Balboa Park and 16th St.

tl;dr, just get a MUNI pass.

>>72288
And if you don't have a MUNI pass you can re-use your tickets, even 6 hours after buying one, most of the bus drivers don't give a shit.

$500 a month.
Thanks to Craigslist!
Hopefully I can find a job within a few months of moving there..

Whoa. Nice. I've never seen anything under $700, and even then, anything under $1000 that isn't in the suburbs is incredibly hard to come by.

Whereabouts is it? Any pics?

OP, you have made a marvelous choice. SF is a lovely town, though pricey and hard to park in.

Eat in Chinatown whenever you can. It is cheap and filling and generations of liberalartfags have saved a lot of money doing so.

Go see all the local attractions -- the Golden Gate, Alcatraz, the cable cars, the old gun positions on the Marin headlands, Fort Point -- all of it. Do it as long as you live there and it's all cheap and accessable.

Go to Golden Gate Park and wander around. It's a cheap, very pleasant way to kill a day.

When you feel like splurging, try the Sunday champagne brunch at the Cliff House.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

Not sure where it is exactly yet. I think somewhere close to Chinatown.

Thanks for the info.

some people still might not know this but an adult fastpass (bus pass) can be used on the bart (subway) for all stops originating and terminating in san francisco.
a fastpass only costs like $45 a month and the public transportation is considered the best in the united states.
oh and the fastpass lets you ride any public transportation in san francisco, buses, light rail, the previously mentioned bart, etc. when i was a kid they let you ride the historic cable cars with them, not so sure about it now

if you are dirt poor the bakeries in chinatown are the best place for you to get your food. after about 3pm the prices drop like mad because they will be closing soon and need to sell out. most of the time you can get 3 pork buns for $1.

another really cheap place is foodsco. its like 3 blocks from costco in the mission district. no membership required and prices are very very cheap. i can get family size boxes of cereal for $2 and not the fake ripoff brands which are even cheaper and practically taste the same.
once they were selling sunny delight at $1 a gallon. they also sell 2-3 gallons of water for $1 if you catch it on sale.
you can also find the huge bags of chips, lays cheetos etc, for sale at $2-2.50 a bag and sometimes even $1.70. on sale you can find the big cans of pringles at $1 each although its 4 for $5 right now (that doesnt mean you need to buy 4 of em to get that price).
you can also find loads of frozen dinners and breakfasts for $1 or less. i just bought a whole bunch of frozen burritos for like 70c each.

Hmm, may be in the Tenderloin then. Kind of a sketchy area, but not too bad.

But if its actually in Chinatown, or North Beach or Nob Hill of the CBD or something, that would fucking rock.

I live in san fran,

in a little apartment a little ways away from golden gate park. I used to live in a typical Californian suburb in the east bay and moved out here to go to art school.

Took some adjusting, like most transitions do. found a job, discovered school can be enjoyable, and now i can't even imagine living back home.

I will say that before i moved i hated alcohol and now that I'm here i seem to go out drinking A LOT.
