Has anyone here actually been on the Japanese highways? How is it compared to da vidyas? is the trafic atleast as dense as it is in freeway speedway?

It really depends on where you are and when you're driving. Generally speaking, highways (aka, the elevated toll highways with higher speed limits) aren't bumper to bumper traffic in most of the country, but it can be dicey in certain areas of Tokyo and Osaka at certain times of day, and at certain times of year (Golden Week, Obon). People on the highways drive almost sanely. On normal roads and streets, in large cities, traffic can be fucking ludicrous, and everybody drives like a fucking pineapplehead.

Still, road trip is the best way to see the country, imo.
