I've been making a habit out of traveling to backwater and otherwise strange places in the United States as a way to ensure a steady stream of those "What the fuck" moments. Best place so far has been Cave City, Kentucky, a city which hasn't changed much since 1960. Full of unmarked sinkholes, caves with no security preventing exploration, and generally odd people. The hiking was absolutely amazing, and you could carry a gun on your back without anyone giving you shit.

My question, fellow /trv/ellers, is more of a request: Can anyone recommend some offbeat places that might be of interest? I've got a bunch of free time to drive/fly around and explore, and Washington DC urban exploration is getting dull.

Pic semi-related, it's a cave in Cave City with a broken security fence.

As a desert-lover, I gotta push Panamint Valley, California. It's separated from Death Valley by the Panamint Range, but it seems to get considerably less visitors than Death Valley. Check out Barker Ranch, Ballarat, and if you're up for it, head up Surprise Canyon to Panamint City. Spectacular scenery, and relative obscurity.

OP Here,

I've not done much in the Southwest, so I might do that. Got some free flight miles from scamming the airlines.

Hatcher Pass, AK. Anywhere in Alaska, actually.

There are old mines and stuff you can check out too, especially in McCarthy. There's a glacier and fossils and railroad remnants and stuff, and getting there is half the fun. there's a wood bridge with no side rails, and a cut in a hill that's just a few feet wider than a car. I remember there being a good pie place too.
