Choose where I go. Op
So /trv,/ I've come to you guys seeking advice. I'm about to sell my car, and want to go on an adventure. I will have around 12k$, and was wondering how long can I possibly make that last. What are some locations where I can live off of that money for a while, without being in a total shithole? I'm really up for anything, staying in multiple locations, or in one place. All that I require is a ticket there, and a ticket home.

Yeah Thailand and that general region is good for travelling on a budget. If you go off the tourist trail a bit (I recommend the coast north of Khao Lak) you can find some really cheap accommodation that you'd think would cost a fortune for the service and setting.

You might want to consider a gap year style tour, check out responsibletravel.com for some ideas or have a look to see where national geographic are going to be heading off to (check their website). They're often good value and you meet amazing people along the way.

That's really cool. Thanks for the link. As far as age goes, how old are most people who take these trips? I'm 20. I could only hope that there'd be people my age I could relate to.

depends a bit... sometimes people do it prior to starting their degree, others do it afterwards... then there's the career break people, it's good to meet a wide range of people.

These trips aren't something to rush into, you need to prepare, they'll usually give you a kit list of what essentials you'll need. If you see something you like, the best thing to do is enquire with the operator, they expect people to have lots of questions, so won't mind if you ask what kind of people usually go/are going on their tours.

True enough, makes sense. Thanks for the help though, it's a really cool site. I'll be sure to look into it more. How far ahead should one plan for a trip like this to make sure it's successful?

Planning ahead depends on you really. There are jabs you might need to get, often a certain number of weeks in advance of travelling for them to be effective. Depending on the country you're travelling to you might need certain visas too, but the tour provider should tell you about all that before you book.

That site has last minute departures that seasoned travellers will just up and go on because they know what to expect and have all the stuff they need. Just make sure you give yourself a few weeks to get your kit together, stuff like good footwear, suitable clothing and all the first aid and repellents you need, depending on how exotic where you're going is!
