Hay guise!

Me and my older brother are planning a trip to the U.S and A for a visit and we want to see the country.

So what I'm looking for is some recommendations of places to see and things to do. My brother and I are industrial workers, so we don't have much money to spend but we are not really poor either.

Could a coast to coast trip be possible by buying a rusty old car and driving it across the country?

All ideas are welcome (except for the troll-style idiotic ones).

With the price of gas, it'd honestly be cheaper to take Amtrak. Do whatever you want to do between Boston and Washington, then get thyself back up to Boston or New York City. From there, take the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago, and the Empire Builder to Seattle. Good shit, man.

Pick a coast and stick to it. Driving across the country doesn't sound all that interesting to me.. the vast majority of the time you would just be shelling out loads of cash on gas for sites about as interesting as Kansas

If you plan some events in a state or two, you would probably have the most fun

no srsly, driving from coast to coast is pointless cause most of the stuff in between is pretty stupid. like everyone is saying here, pick a location and stick to the general area...either west or east coast etc. That if you don't want to spend too much

There is absolutely nothing between the Mississippi and the Rockies. And the distance between the coasts is HUUGGGGEEE, its like driving from Portugal to Turkey.

Chilling in the North East will probably be the best. DC has really cool museums and has fun parts, same goes for Philly. New York is the center of the Western world, theres a million different things to do but it tends to be very expensive, go to myopenbar.com to find cheap drinks for the night. Boston's a lot of fun and if you feel like it head up to Canada and go gamble in Niagara Falls and check out Toronto and Montreal.

Amtrak goes through all these places, and theres also chinatown buses which are really cheap but decent rides if noone steals your organs.

Actually I don't think Amtrak goes to Niagara, but its an hour or two out of Toronto so it shouldn't be hard to get there, the falls are beautiful and its a fun little tourist trap

(from wiki)
"The trio point out the hassle of renting out a car, ranging from ignorant rental agents to not being able to find their car once it's pointed out to them. Their premise was to see if it could be cheaper to buy a car rather than rent so, as a result, on their trip to the United States, the three were given USD$1000 to find a used car. Clarkson bought a 1989 Chevrolet Camaro RS; Hammond a Dodge Ram 150 pickup truck; and May a 1989 Cadillac Brougham."

"They concluded that it was viable to buy, rather than rent, a car. Clarkson summed up the trip with his long-held opinion: 'Don't go to America!'"
if you wanna go, try west coast... hit Lake Tahoe (CA/NV). that way you can go around there (big, beautiful lake), then head down to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Las Angeles, and even Mexico if you wanted.
Florida might be nice for clubbing stuff... New York for the big city and some nice farm lands (north part of NY).

past that... eh.... lots of nothing =P

Amtrak goes to Buffalo, which is the city on the American side of the falls. I'm pretty sure VIA (Canadamtrak) goes to Niagara from Toronto and Montreal.

OP here, thanks for all suggestions!

So the roadtrip wouldn't be worth it?

We were thinking about being in florida if we were to skip the coast to coast thing. Also NY would be interresting.

The main thing is to take part of the American lifestyle, compared to Sweden many things are different in the states, the cars, trucks, buildings, people and food for example.

We are now three people on this trip, a friend of my brother is on too. So we could probably afford to buy an old car and try to sell it later when we go back home.

Anyways, it will be fun to make this trip and experience America.

Yes it does, dumbshit. Look at the Empire Service route on amtrak.com's Route Atlas. Right from motherfucking New York City.
