In most of Europe you actually don't need to overprepare. You most likely won't be robbed by knife- or gunpoint, but pickpocketed instead.
You can prepare by having zippers on your pockets. Also, if you are used to carrying a wallet, disperse it's contents in your pockets and go without it. It'll feel weird, but if you loose one picket's contents, you still have the rest.
Do not let people lend your cell phone, and don't leave your backpack unattended - it might very well disappear. If you are afraid people will rifle through your pack in a busy area, keep it in front of you. Simple stuff like this is all you need, really. If you can avoid it, don't carry too much currency on you. Cards you can always cancel.
