So,

This question goes out to new zealanders or anyone who knows about new zealand culture. I was asked out to the movies by a man from NZ, but he claims that in NZ going to the movies != date. Is he just BSing so that I'm more inclined to go, or is this true?

He also asked me out to coffee the other day, which he claimed was the same deal, but he paid for my coffee, which seems like a pretty date-like move.

Do you really have to put a label on it? Figure out what you want from the interaction. Are you just along for the free food and other shit or do you actually want to shag the guy?
>> Anonymous
>>69242
Are you American? Because I've noticed that doing *ANYTHING* with a girl in America = a "date". Don't you just hang out and talk? The fuck is going on in your country?
>> Anonymous
>>69249
I don't want him to pay for my food. I just want a friendship, but when he pays for stuff it makes me uncomfortable since it leads me to believe he's under the impression that it *is* a date and perhaps is expecting something in return.

>>69251
Hey, I'm just a product of my environment. Give me a break. Guys in this country usually treat anything on a one-on-one basis as a date, so it's weird for me to do something on a one-on-one basis that isn't a date.

>>69251

Pretty much.

No slitches I know would hang out with a male friend if they are in a relationship.

Fucking hate America.

lol wut.

>>69254
here

For me it's the exact opposite.

Maybe we should meet up have coffee, talk and then go home as platonic friends.

Uh, nothing.

Your question is worded oddly though, I'm not exactly sure what your asking.

>>69258
I'm asking: based on NZ culture, does the New Zealander really see these outings as platonic as he claims, or is he just saying that he does so that I would be more likely to go in the event that I'm not interested in dating him (which I'm not)?
>> Anonymous
>>69260

lol I dunno.

He probably wants to fuck you, but don't let me fuck up a friendship.

Sheesh, just make it clear that it's a date and refuse to let anything be bought for you. If he baws, don't be afraid to stand your ground.

Your friends suck. Trade them in for new models.

What the hell is wrong with you people? Do you not buy your friends shit every now and then while you're out?

Not really no.

I wish they'd all watcht his:

iPc related. Apparently drunk hipsters are also considered delectable by delirious and deluded traveling dunces. I tried to say as much in the comments section, but they like to exercise censorship clearly 'cause my post was deleted. :'(

Oh my god you fucking sad sack! Stop being a homophobe (and that's what it is, you're shitting your pants at the thought of any m/m bonding).

Okay, to set the record straight (hurr durr), as a NZ male I have, and will continue to go to the movies with platonic friends, especially if it's something we both want to see. If you're shitting bricks at the thought of one-on-one time with this guy, why not ask him to invite one of his friends along, or ask if you can bring one? Christ.

As for buying you coffee, that's often a competition among my friends and family. It's a show of generosity and goodwill and not a tool to place expectations on you. Wtf are you thinking?

I don't even know what the fuck is going on and even I can see you're being a shit friend. You seem like damaged goods before he even gets around to knowing you.

This just paints Americans are very highly strung. Take a Pacific chill-pill, relax, and enjoy the company. Fuck, man.

since when is being a good person and paying for someone considered a sexual move?

>homophobe
Surprise! The new zealander and I are both gay.

>>69320
From my experience, it generally is here in America, which is why I came here to get a wider cultural perspective.

If you go into every interaction thinking like this, or any new place and think it's going to be like what you've always "known", what do you think you're going to find?
>> Anonymous
>>69326

i'm american and I pay for friends and family quite often. Just because men are being friendly towards women doesn't mean we want to get in your pants

This is why I hate women. Everything we do is considered a sexual advance. Does being straight-up friendly exist anymore?

>>69330
Well, if he were a good friend, maybe this wouldn't be so strange, but I've only just met him. I've never had anyone other than a close friend, family member or date pay for me. It just seems plain weird (to me) for someone you've just met for the first time ever to buy your drink, unless of course they're interested in you.

He paid again this time, by the way. I kept ahead of him in line at the theater and asked for one, but he jumped out and exclaimed "make that two," whipping out his wallet. Now, from what I've known before, that seems a date-like move, BUT I'm still trying to remain open-minded about it.

He also offered to buy me popcorn. I declined.

Now that is a date-like move, have you told him:
'This is not a date, just a friendly outing - friends split the tab, only pay for each other on occassion, or take turns paying for each other by mutual agreement.'

>>69326

You're both gay...

Might as well throw all cultural preconceptions out the window anyway. You're both fucked in the head so I'm sure you're both equally neurotic about whether its a date or not.

And yes he does want to fuck you.
And I'm sure you'll give in with a few drinks in you.

PS. what do americans think of NZ accent? =D
>> Anonymous
>>69350

"i like your accent, where are you from?"

"new zealand"

"cool"

thats as far as it goes
>> Anonymous
It's not strange, even if you're both gay. Stop getting bent out of shape over what he's doing and just appreciate the thought.

At worst, just clarify that you're not interested in anything right now, but don't stress it. Learn to manage your fucking interactions better too, and don't seek validation on 4chan.

to OP.

YOU ARE GOING TO FUCK ALOT OF DUDE.

but seriously. yeah he likes you. and he sounds like a dork.

ask him if he likes hentai. his reaction will show his true self.
>> easttamaki123
Its not just american females which do this. Its the majority of girls here in New Zealand too.

There were a few girls i used to be friends with but as soon as you pay for lunch or get them a drink all of a sudden they get the wrong idea and they dont talk to you again.

Fuckin stupid attitude. And theres no way to get around it. If pay for friends all the time, and they see that shit too. why is it different all of a sudden when i do it for a girl?

zsdroghpawu43u90 gwf bleh~ it would have been good to keep those two as friends -_-

ah well. shit happens.

What the fuck is up with America? I go out with male friends one-on-one all the time. Going to movies in groups is distracting. You niggers need to loosen up the homophobia a little.

New Zealand culture = getting drunk on shitty beer while screaming something about rugby, hating native New Zealanders, and anyone brown, particularly those of the Muslim persuasion.
