I'm going to Japan for a month and a half in a few weeks. I'm going with a friend who's going on vacation (he invited me).

How English-friendly is Japan? I know very little Japanese, but my friend knows more (not perfect, though). Do Japanese think higher of Canadians than Americans? (I'm Canadian if it matters)

What are some things to check out? I have so many questions because I am rich with excitement.

You don't have to learn the language. Learn some basics is all.

Japanese people don't care what country you're from. You're not Japanese, that's what counts. Then in that respect, if you're white, you're ranked the highest. Then it sort of goes down to Koreans and Chinese at the bottom.

Well, let's say I went into a shop to buy something, would I get harassed and short changed because I am white? This is my only concern, really.

No, they aren't Chinese. They Japanese are very polite and awfully trustworthy. If they don't want you in their establishment, there will probably be a sign saying so. I couldn't imagine you'd get short changed.

I went there and shoulda practiced more jap, sure I ordered food and such but it's pretty easy to get by. Winging it is easy to - grunting and point sno prob.

Don't think they'd look down on you. They're english is american-english anyway from tapes etc.

The accent will probably mostly sound the same to them.

Peace park, himeji castle, disneyland srsly, department stores, just travelling by train itself in their crazy ass stations, tallest building, eat places etc

Some japs don't like foreigners, but no harrassment. Too polite - they wouldn't dare.

Also, you're a celebrity there. More cause for awestruckness.

Grab yourself a book called "Making out in Japanese." It's small, and it contains basically everything you need, and none of the phrases are especially difficult. It's based on natural/casual speaking, so you won't sound like a little girl when you try to talk.

Canadan is same as American. You rook rike.

It simply won't matter. If you're a gaijin you're going to be kept at a distance (objectified, often) no matter what.

Hi canada fag...i am planning a trip to Japan soon myself...question for those that have gone...are the nips prone to be offended by someone trying to speak their language and doing a mediocre job at such, or do they appreciate you trying to convey your point in their tounge?

Well, i was in Japan for two weeks about a couple of years ago, stayed in tokyo and travelled around abit, as for the english part, didn't find many japanese who could talk english, some waiters in resturants maybe, and young people ofcourse, and even if they knwo enlish they're not very good at it, atleast not the people we met ;)
So try to learn some japanese phrases just so you know how to ask for directions and such...
As for places to check out, different shrines and temples, i was in Odawara for one day, took a bath in some hot spring, that was cool, checked out two castles, Odawara castle was one of them, but it wasn't the riginal, only a rebuilt copy, and then i was in Matsumoto, that town still had the original Castle(Check Picture! i took, quite proud of it lol)
If.. you visit Tokyo, make sure to go to Ginza, Shibuya and ofcourse Akihabara =)
As for food... they have the best, Ramen, Udon, Sushi, Japanese bbq and so on!

have fun, trust me you'll have a sh*t load of fun there, it's completely different over there compared to what it's like over here in the west, like a different world if you ask me :D
