Well, disregarding the "this place sux but go to that place instead" crap...
Every part of the US has its part to offer. True, some places are kinda por/rundown/redneck/ghetto, but one man's trash is another man's treasure.
If you're looking for rural, small-town traditional food/fare and xcenery, then pick a less populated area, and in deciding which one, just factor in what type of small-town you're looknig for.
If you're looking for more of a modern/metropolitan place, then just pick a big city. Which one? Base it off of crime rate or baseball team or altitude or whatever, there's really no diference, unless you're looking for a specific landmark. (9/11 memorial, Space Needle, Gateway Arch, etc.)
