Sad but true: America's one of the cheapest places to live right now. Everything in Europe costs about the same amount /numerically/ but the Euro is worth 60% *more* than the US dollar right now. Also taxes in Europe are higher, and fuel is ridiculously expensive (although you said you could live w/o a car). The UK's even "worse." Australia's dollar isn't valued quite as high, but the costs of basics like fuel, food, and even water are comparatively high and rising. Canada's dollar is valued similarly to the US's, but like Europe taxes are higher. Canada would be an easier move, too.
You also forgot another option: New Zealand. Although there's only one "major" city (Auckland), it's cheaper than Europe, UK, or Australia.
