Belfast Anonymous
Dear /trv/

I'm from Belgium, and recently ended uni. I just got confirmation that for my first job EVER I'm moving abroad to Belfast. Starting the 25th so kinda short notice but anyway, you know the drill. If anyone can give me any general info about the place, even nice apartments to stay or something, tips... please fire off. Thank you!

As a Belgian, I guess you must be Catholic, so just remember to go to the hotels that are facing Rome and you'll get the best deal.
>> Anonymous
OP here: actually I'm not Catholic at all. Would that be a problem?

Flak vests are getting cheaper and cheaper these days, pick one of those up

BTW why would you choose bad Ireland over good Ireland

>>48345
No you're good, as a Catholic you can only become a boxer or an actor.

steer clear of the UDA and IRA and any other three letter abbreviation and you will be fine - get mixed up in any of that shit and youre dealing with people who make the scicillian and new york mafuia look like bouncers for mothercare shops

im from northern ireland, west belfast to be precise.

As already stated, avoid anyone and anything associated with any "3 letter abbreviation" eg. IRA UDA UFF YCV and read up on the political/religious devision here, but keep your thoughts on it to your self when you are here because talking about it too much is liable to get you into trouble.

to put it shortly, some uneducated catholics here hate some uneducated protestants here and vice versa, its more to do with the political divide between loyalists and nationalists but since the participants are hugely ignorant and basically make up the proletariat in this country they dont divide church and state, political ideals and religion.

If you want, when you get over here ill give you a tour of the city for free, i know the place like the back of my hand.

The best bars in belfast in my opinion are "The John Hewitt" which is about 400 feet to the right of the cathedal you have pictured, and the botanic inn which is up past botanic.

anyway, any more info, feel free to ask.

Sounds like a sneak preview of America's future.

OP here: sounds nice. What about the cost to stay, what's the average?

the price of living here is reasonably high, but its only about as bad as most of continental europe cities.

to give you an idea, a pint is about 3 pounds/5 euro.
hotel rooms go for anything between 30 and 1000 pounds a night depending on the place.

rent is the same, some areas rent is super high, and in some its like 20 pounds a week! To be honest if you look about a bit you should have no problems, particularly because your job sounds reasonably well paid, considering the move etc and the fact that you are a graduate. and are multilingual

We are actually one of the most cultured places to go in europe, we have fantastic arts, music, theatre, some of the best concert venues in the EU, huge numbers of spoken languages, great infrastructure, good people etc.

It's brilliant here.

Also to the OP, food is talked of as being "expensive" but its really not if you know where to go, you can get a fantastic meal here for 5 pounds with a pint, and the food market at st georges is second only to the san lorenzo market in florence, fantastic food, for very little money.

Cuisine here would be right up your alley because if im not mistaken people from your country like rich food and so do we.

I can give you a website that you can send me your mobile number over so i can show you around when you get here because putting a number on 4chan is reasonably risky. Too many immature kids!

Sorry, I was poking fun more at America's rising religious than anything else. In fact, that's all that I was poking fun at :P

no problem.

another wee thing is i can verse you in northern Irish Slang and colloquialisms. we dont really speak English per se. Should make it a lot easier to understand people.

My fellow Norn Ironfag might be overselling Belfast somewhat. It's a nice place and good people, but I grew bored after a year of living there. One thing you should definitely do is take advantage of Ireland being a small place, you can get out and see lots of it, both North and South. In Belfast itself, the main attractions for me remain the Queen's Film Theatre which is an excellent arthouse cinema, Kelly's Cellar and the Duke of York which are two great pubs and St. Georges Market which, as Anon said, offers good local food for cheap.
And don't worry about the sectarian thing, unless you go looking for it trouble won't find you.
>> Anonymous
that is very true, the sectarian thing is majorly overplayed by the media, its not that bad in reality.

and i dont believe im overselling Norn Iorn, its a great place and its only getting better

I'll be working at GEM, don't know if you ever heard of it. Anyway, yeah the website for mobile phone numbers seems like a good idea. Thanks everyone else who responded as well.

Northern Ireland = the Scotland that nobody ever wanted
>> Anonymous
The Scotland nobody ever wanted?

Yes, of course, that would explain why we have had 100 years of civil war to decide who owns it... You really followed though with the logic on this one didn't you corkey?

GEM is really rather handy for the central rail station, which is going to be nice for you because it means you can travel all over.

Do you mind what website you sign up to to exchange phone numbers?

If you sign up to one and tell me what your username is i will send you my number.
