Hola /trv/

I'm moving to Canadia mid-2009 to attend college, but I don't know much other than what my girlfriend (who moved there prior to me, she started earlier) and a friend tell me. I'll be in Alberta.

Other than my flask of maple syrup and hockey stick (for fending off the vicious mooses), what should I know beforehand? Apartment rent costs, gas prices, anything you guys can think of, it'll all be very appreciated!

pic related, why I need a solid hockey stick.

Everything's cheaper, the food's better, the air/water's cleaner, the women are gorgeous, there are no old crazy black homeless men that want to fight you at arbys for no reason, and I'm moving to quebec as soon as I learn how to say anything other than "go fuck yourself" in french. ;)

Alberta is like America but swimming in tons of oil money

rent is getting pretty high in both Calgary and Edmonton (which city will you be in?) but in general you'll discover that Alberta is very much like the United States (some of it anyways -- I always feel at home in Seattle for example but St. Louis is weird)

Yeah, Alberta is basically America, except they're still obsessed with hockey.

Oh Alberta, the Texas of Canada ^_^ Anyways, I guess I could tell you about Edmonton since I pretty much grew up there.

Now, since you asked about gas prices, I'll assume you have a car, which is really awesome in Edmonton because you need a car to go anywhere pretty much.

Bums downtown are mostly harmless. They'll just try to give you a crappy mag or something.

Bus system, if you have to use it, is pretty easy to figure out. The trip planner on the ETS website (http://www.takeets.com/) is fucking awesome.

Streets are all on a grid system, with streets running north and south and avenues running east and west. The further north you go, the higher the avenue number, and the further west you go, the higher the street number. And to find a nearby intersection from a street address, well, here's an example:

1249 67th street

You have the street. Now to get the avenue you just take away the last two digits so that you have 12th Ave. As for streets in Mill Woods, I just used google maps, because it was waaaay too wierd for me :S

The ravine is awesome and big, but then you'll hear of foxes and stuff in the fall. Meh, whatevs.

There's always potholes.

West Edmonton Mall gets really, really lame if you live by it too long, but sometimes there's just nothing better to do.

If you're going to Whyte Ave., just take the bus. If you're going downtown during a festival, just take the bus. Much easier, I found.

And avoid the area around Kingsway mall at night. I even felt safer at Jasper Place :S

So yeah, that's all I can think of for now. I'll probably be back soon with more fun stuff.

Kudos mon gars. I moved to Montréal, and it's awesome en câline :D

Oh yeah, and the Franco-Albertans pretty much chased me out of Alberta with torches for speaking like a Québécois, haha.
