Hi there /trv/. My native language is English, and I'm already learning French, what should my third language be if I'm looking for something useful in a variety of countries?

Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin come to mind, although I'd really rather take German or Japanese (4chan ergo weeaboo) at the moment, but I thought I'd ask for some advice.

Mandarin Chinese, it's spoken by more people than any other language.

It's also only useful in one country.

Try Spanish. Arabic is not only difficult in and of itself, but its various dialects from country to country are mutually unintelligible. German would be okay, but only for about 3-4 countries. Japanese, like Mandarin, is good only for one.

But that one country is the largest and (in my opinion) one of the most diversely experiential nations on earth.

>>19423I really enjoyed learning Hindi and although that means dealing with hippy tourists who think india is a cute place to do power yoga and take artsy photos of poor people it has been well worth it as I was easily able to get a job even with my basic Hindi language skills and experience a life as a traveler and not as a hardcore tourist.

Dude, Mandarin is only even understood by like, 10% of the country. People in BEIJING have their own mutually unintelligible dialect for christ's sake.

Factoring in that Chinese in general is far and away the hardest language for Westerners to learn, it's just not worth it, unless you're in international business or something.

oh god fail.
anyway, OP, learn german. the language is pretty related to english (well, other way around- english is a germanic language. or something), and the grammar isn't bad at all. i find it to be enjoyable, anyway

You'll find Italian very easy to learn if you've had enough French.

OP once again...I actually took Spanish back in HS, and can already pick my way through written Italian and Portugese, so I assume they would be fairly easy to pick up but I'd rather learn something in a different language family altogether...

Mandarin is known by all the smart/wealthy Chinese too (except maybe hong kong/taiwan and other exceptions). So who do you want to talk to exactly?

Indonesia.

It's pretty fucking good, and it's relatively easy to pick up

Mandarin is made-up faggot-speak. Chinks speak their own dialect at home, especially those with any money. Mandafail is a language of convenience, not an indicator of class.

You already had spanish in HS OP? Then go for full blown Spanish extreme. Increase ur skillz

If you're going to go for Arabic, learn the Levantine (diplomatics, history, modern culture, music, partying etc), Egyptian (history, music industry, films, etc) and/or Gulf Arabic (oil, burqas, fundamentalistfags, and massive shopping in Dubai) dialects.

The former two are KIND OF similar, the latter is entirely unintelligible with the other two, as far as I know.
