I'm going to be living in Taipei for two months starting at the end of June to learn Chinese. I used to go there every summer to visit family, but I haven't been there in quite a while now. I remember some things: the National Palace Museum and the night markets, but not much else.

Is there anything I should know ahead of time? Anything I should bring?

a t-shirt with a picture of the Tianenmen Square tank blocking guy on it; be sure to wear it in front of as many policemen as possible

OP said Taipei not Beijing. If he wore that he'd be greeted warmly.

Seeing that he's going to Taiwan, I think you've failed.

bring some OFF...humid as hell in the summer and lotsa mosquitos

or get some bugs-off patches, stickers that keep mosquitos away. they sell them there.

Oh yeah and visit the flower farms in the hills/mountains, very pretty sight and good food there too. Super-cheap flowers for any girls you're trying to pick up

Breakfast stands there make me want to go back ;_; fresh warm soy/rice milk and the fried dough and pastries...

But summer is monsoon season. Avoid walking near large trees with big branches when the wind gets heavy. Might want some rain gear though it's cheaper there.

Also learn your chinese FAST (and try to pick up some Taiwanese) otherwise cabbies will rip you off on fare.

btw National Palace Museum things are fakes. The real jewels are in the mountains in case China invades. =]

You really only need enough to tell them where you're going with good pronunciation to stop that.
Otherwise, carry a pad and pen and write down their name and license number when you think they're ripping you off. They'll suddenly become very honest.

Yea, I remember the humidity well. This is supposed to be the worst part of the year too...

One time my family and I went through the mountains. I think we picked up some ridiculously good white peaches in the area.

lol. Probably, but I still like it.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

I spent Memorial Day weekend in Taipei and had a great time. I found the cabbies to be very honest (if they ripped me off, fuck it- the total fare was still low enough that I didnt notice) and even the street vendors would hand me back the excess money I gave them when I mistakenly paid with 10x the amount of the item I was buying.

I question the Nation Museum treasures being fake; if China invades, what the fuck good does hiding the real ones in a mountain do?

=_= I meant it as a joke. It's an urban legend there, that's all.

If you're travelling, take the High Speed Rail. It's the first export of the Shinkansen anywhere in the world.
