I'm going to visit Germany next summer with my dad and cousin. I've heard various comments about how they hate Americans and virtually everyone who isn't German because they're hardcore nationalists. I'm sandy blond and hazel eyed and have a healthy BMI. What would they think of an American tourist such as myself?

Just don't dick around, most of the American tourists they have come to expect are 1)Fucking kids who just wanna get drunk and fuck 2) neo-nazi's who don't know shit 3)Jews who yell at them and expect them to apologize

Just don't be a dong to them and it is a really nice place to travel. (and for the love of God, speak German! I know alot of them speak English but don't expect it, and ALWAYS, I MEAN ALWAYS, REFER TO THEM AS SIE! You don't know anyone in that country well enough to say du)

Where are you from? I was in the Berlin area and the tourist spots usually had a few Englishmen buzzing around.

Don't go there expecting to find many/any English speakers.
I was in Berlin for about a month straight for a class in college (Not an indoor class, always outside at some historic or nationally important area) and I think I ran into a grand total of 2 maybe 3 English speakers that were Germans and not an ex-pat or something

Germans are fucking nice to everyone.

Don't wear a George Bush t-shirt and you'll be just another tourist.

As soon as you open your mouth, it is apparent your not a German, of course non-verbal communication gives it away a bit also.
If you do talk with them, try and speak in German, even if you suck. I found that while I was in Berlin for an extended time (3 weeks) by at least showing an attempt, even if it was with a communication book, the people I spoke with were more receptive and were genuinely friendy

Do some exploring alone, without your dad and cousin. It's easier to meet people when you're alone, not in a group. Read a travel guide or two before you go (such as Rough Guide) to find out about people and places. When meeting Germans, try not to assume that someone is a "hardcore nationalist" and you have already avoided insulting people. Dress more tastefully, speak less loudly, gesticulate less than in America and you'll make a positive impression.

Are you from eastern Germany?

Forget that bullshit that your media is telling you. We don't hate Americans. Not at all.
We hate your President and think that most of you are stupid and arrogant, but if you don't act like a dick, nothing will happen.

Also the regular German is no way a hardcore nationalist. It's sad, but everytime someone says something like that he loves his country etc. he's immediately declared a Nazi. It improved after the Football Worldcup but not much.

I'm an Englishman living and working in Germany. The German people love the English at least,(as far as my experience goes and I live in Baden-württemberg) I already had many German friends when I moved here though. The Americans are a mixed bag of sorts. Some people hate them, some love them, most however judge them on a person by person basis as it should be. Learn as much German as you can if you want to meet people OP, most young do speak some English but it's far more polite to speak German. As previously mentioned, use sie at all times unless the other person uses du.

I've made most my friends just through passing comments in German even though many will giggle at the way you pronounce things.

The sterotypical German wears glasses, rides a bicycle with a beer in one hand, pastery in the other on his way to the recycling bins.

If you visit Frankfurt, you will get basicaly fucked up. If you go into any other city than Frankfurt, you will get basicaly fucked up. I'm proud living in the fucking poop hole I sit at the moment. I will never leave this for any unserious reasons. Just be friendly to others, don't talkt to turks and be respective to russians. If you will find any canadian.. Blow his brain out.

Some maybe helpful tips according to my personal experiences:
- Virtually anyone you call a nationalist in Germany will regard this as an insult (wouldn't you too?)
- Almost people will aid you, if you ask kindly.
- Almost any German under 35 is able to speak english, at least at a very basic level, since it is usually taught as the first foreign language. Most people don't use it regularily and are therefore hesitant. Speak slowly.
- If you attempt to speak german, be aware that people usually will get amused, but this also makes conversation easier.
- The usual exceptions to very dumb people apply.
- Try to see stuff apart from the usual sites. The famous stuff like Neuschwanstein, Hofbräuhaus, etc. is IMO ripoff.

What do you want do do? Urban, Nature, Sights, Culture?
