Summer Cruise Anonymous
My family is taking a cruise this summer, but we haven't decided where to go or what cruise line to take. Choices are

(Cruise Line) Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess

(Destination) Eastern and Western Caribbean, Eastern and Western Mediterranean, Hawaii

Opinions?

I've been on quite a few cruises. Here is what I've learned.

-Carnival is the proletariat cruise line. Look for lots of stinking lower-middle class families, and single frat boys and club girls trying to get laid. Service is so so, food is pretty good.

-Royal Caribbean is classier, but not entirely stuffy. More well to do people, but a higher percentage of older people as well. All in all, a good mix. Service is fantastic. Food is fantastic in the dining room, and great in the other restaurants. Plenty to do.

Destinations - How old are you? Realize that if you're 18, Royal Caribbean lets you drink in international waters if that's important to you. Not sure if Carnival does or not. Eastern Caribbean is pretty nice. Antigua and Barbados will have guys offering you ganja if you look cool. Great scenery. Western I've never been to, but I expect its great as well. Mediterranean I'm sure is totally different. If you choose this, make sure you stop at Madira! Hawaii will have you mostly at sea, so if you're okay with doing things onboard, it will be fine.

VERY IMPORTANT - The size and launch of the ship model (on RC, its XXXXXX of the seas) is very important to how good a time you'll have. Bigger and newer ships have the best onboard activities. Do your research and look for the biggest and newest ship for your destination. Please keep in mind that the biggest ships won't "fit" on some of the ports in certain areas, but still look for the newest and largest of those that will. (ie The mediterranean)

Rooms- GET A ROOM WITH A BALCONY at minimum. Trust me. Its worth it when you're having hot hippy chick sex with her bent against the railing and the moonlight reflecting off the water. That my friends, is an epic win.

Here's my experience with the Carnival Line. Like>>2381said about Carnival, there will be alot of middle-class families and frat kids on line. The cruiseship I went to "Carnival Freedom" offer a place for teens called "Club O squared". There are very few fun activities for teens, but the vidya games systems they offer and free fruit plates make it up. If you do go on Carnival Freedom, spend some time at Scott's Bar. Amazing piano player/singer.

Whats the creme de la creme of cruise lines then? Above Royal Carribean?

I like Royal Caribbean a lot, but I recently took a NCL cruise that was nice purely based on "eat whenever you want." Eating time restrictions on the other cruise lines suck.

I'd recommend Carnival simply because the food was fucking awesome. Stay away from the small ships cause the bigger the ships the more stuff they have to do and pretty much the better the service if you don't mind the lower-middle class people on their vacation.

A Conquest Class cruise liner is probably the way to go:
Carnival Conquest
Carnival Glory
Carnival Valor
Carnival Liberty
Carnival Freedom

If I could next time I wanna try an even bigger Splendor Class but the first isn't being deployed till this year.

I'm assuming Royal Carribean does not go to the mediterranean?

Still, fuck yeah for sex over railings!

Not OP here, but also curious about cruises.

Which cruise do you find to have a higher population of younger people? Not children mind you, but people that a 19-year-old would get along with.

Have you ever spent time watching TV on the ship? I never realized they broadcast networks from Denver.

You might as well go on a cruise on High seasons like June, July and August. Go for trips that visit the south like ST. Thomas, San Juan. Pretty much hot places.

Well Carnival seemed to have more families and a bit of young people and Royal Carribian in my experience was a bunch of old people 0.o;; Can't speak for the others though.

Would you say that High Seasons is one of these big ships you're talking about?

Crown Princess FTW

No, what I mean is the best time for more people to go on cruises. You are more likely find more younger people on summer and winter cruise then anywhere else. But be warned that High seasons cost more than its low seasons.

I went on royal caribbean this summer and it was epic. Rooms for 4 people are bunkbed style in economy class... be warned. There was a lot to do and a lot of alcohol XD Enchantment of the Seas for the win though!

Couple of additions (I wrote the long post)

1. Big ships on RC are The "Freedom" family and the "Voyager" family. If you're going someplace with deep water (Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii etc...) Get one of these. Freedom is the newest. Voyager class is pretty good too. Check them out on their website. Freedoms apparently have a place you can surf, on the damn boat.

2. As far as "classier" than RC, it gets really traditional. Queen Mary II, and that sort of thing. If you want your cruising experience to be like "Titanic" (you know, minus the frozen death), look around for one of those. This means you'll dress for dinner every night, there are definite differences between the room classes in what you can do, afternoon tea etc...

That said, Celebrity Cruises is associated with Royal Caribbean (their "frequent cruiser benefits" cross over) and is the "Luxury" or "Boutique" cruise line. I've never cruised with them, but they have some interesting destinations and since I have a platinum level RC membership (5 cruises complete) I'll probably give them a try sometimes.

So, Celebrity is probably the most luxurious cruiseline from what I've heard.

Important: There is a very good chance you'll get sick on board in one of two ways

1. Motion sickness - If you've never been on a boat before and the water gets a little rough, many people get motion sickness. Bring or buy dramamine. This usually will go away in a day or two, so if you pick a 7 night cruise, expect that one of them you may want to stay in and rest. Take a walk up on the open decks if you feel up to it - the breeze is nice when the ship is moving quickly.

2. Shipboard plague - There is the potential for what we like to call shipboard plague. This can come in the form of a cold that quickly spreads through the passengers, or in the worst case scenario a stomach virus. Lots of people in limited quarters can sometimes equal massive failure. I can't stress it enough to bring your own cold medicine and for fuck's sake try to keep your immune system up.

You may not be hit by either of these, but hey, better safe than sorry...
