ITT, we reveal our own misconceptions about geography, and laugh at others'.

I used to think Quebec and New Zealand were Scandinavian countries.

Also, the year we got a new principal at my elementary school, she introduced something like "country of the week," where each Monday she'd pick a new classroom and country and make the kids in that class do research on their country, then build a big poster board and have it posted in the cafeteria on Friday. She would announce the class and country over the intercom. It worked great the first couple of weeks (Mexico and France) but she was surprised to learn after the third Monday that "Africa" was not a country.

I'm an American.

I cannot remember the name of any african country below the Sahara. It's impossible. Libya, Tunesia, Egypt, Morocco. Done, the others are just one big mush to me.

I also thought Tasmania was it's own country! Lulz all around.

It was very obvious that you were American before you said it.

Yes, I know, but I'm sure the Eurofags have thought some equally stupid things in their lifetimes. The Scandinavia thing was back when I was in high school.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, oh man, you're the epitome of the American stereotype in Europe, you are aware of that, right?

I mean, in elementary school, I thought Tanzania was in South America and that Abu Dhabi only was a fictional land in the Garfield comics, but seriously, give me a fucking break.

I had the usual things like China = Asia, and all other Asian countries were just cities in China. Although, where I live (East Coast) no one knows the word "Asian" anyway, they just call anyone of Asian decent "Chinese" so that was hardly my fault for being confused as a kid.

wow the stuff in this thread is pretty bad. my worst error was to think that bermuda and the bermuda triangle were in the middle of the pacific. thats it.

Mmm, I never understood the GB/UK confusion...

I thought Russia become the Soviet Union after 1991 instead of Soviet Union dissolving into the Russian Republic...

For the longest time I thought the great wall of china covered all of china...

I had a globe as a kid and my dad was a pretty cool guy, so I didn't really have many misconceptions...

For some odd reason, I always thought Poland was in the Arctic and always covered in snow. Until I was 12 or so.

I thought Japan and China were more southern than they are.
I still cannot, for the life of me, locate a number of major British and American cities on a map (I'm British).
I have no clue where Paris, Berlin and Madrid are (I know wher France, Germany and Spain are, just not their capitals).
I can never remember what the current composition of far eastern Europe is.
My south Asian and Middle-eastern geography is missing, as is my central African and south American.
I don't know where most American states are beyond the really famous ones.
>> Anonymous
>>17424

I think your dad is a pretty cool guy. eh bought you a globe as a kid and doesnt afraid of anything.

Anyway, the country is the UK. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain = England & Wales, + Scotland.
Then came the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

But when Ireland gained independence, Northern Ireland stayed (or we kept that bitch eheheheh, however you want to look at it)

So it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I thought Japan and the phillipines were wayyy more south too.

I didn't expect them to be so high up.

Also, I thought Africa was like these books I had, written by Jane Goodall... Africa is not like that, kids. It's legendary fail, 4 millenia and running.

Thanks for the clarification.

And yeah, I do think eh's a pretty cool guy. The man probably knows everything that went on in the last 50 years in the world.

I mean, he saw upfront Soviet weapons/planes testing in the Mediterranean, has probably explored more of the US and southern Canada than anybody else, and I think he was even in the far east at one point...

Call me a nerd, but as a kid I wanted a globe. Shit looked so cool.

Until I was about 10, I thought that Bayreuth was Beirut in Lebanon. In my defense, Beirut is spelled "Beyrouth" there.
As a kid, I was also firmly convinced that Berlin was right on the border between West and East Germany, because of the wall.
I also assumed that Edinburgh was in Germany, until I read about the Flying Scotsman, wondered how a train could go from London to Germany (no chunnel yet at the time), and looked it up.

I can't remember names and locations of smaller countries in Africa and Asia unless they have some genocide going on at a given time. I confuse Niger and Nigeria also, both should just be called "Niggerania".

In the 9th grade I was in the pre-AP Social Studies class and we were all given a blank map and some countries had numbers from 1 to 25 in them. So we had to write all of those countries name's down. I got 24 out of 25 right, but the next highest was 12, and the average for the rest of the class was about 4. I was really surprised that everyone was completely ignorant concerning geography. Anyway, the one I got wrong was Turkmenistan; I thought it was Uzbekistan.

I really can't place any countries in Europe outside of the UK, Spain, Italy, and France. Nothing in the continent ever interested, I always found the Europe part in history class really boring, have no plans to ever goto Europe, and I'm not white so I have no ties to it. I just never bothered to learn the continent. I'm pretty good at geography outside of Europe though. I didn't realize Bermuda wasn't in the Caribbean until after I graduated from high school.

In elementary school, I thought Suriname was in Africa (on account of all the black folk from there).

I know where Brazil and Argentina is but then it's over.

I used to think Maryland was not part of the US, but a seperate country. And it was near Spain.

I was extraordinarily dense about the whole thing, I just didn't get it. But once I learned how to read I stopped having this problem.

I was pretty obsessed with geography as a little kid for no good reason, so I didn't have most of those problems.
