Does anyone have any intense travel experiences with the US mountain folk? Most that I've met are nice and vaguely normal albeit extremely religious, but I've heard some ridiculous stories from a friend that used to live in Kentucky. Also, recommend some places to have bizarre hillbilly experiences...specifics, preferably.
>> Anonymous
Um.. can you tell us some of those stories to start us off? I personally don't have any.
>> Anonymous
I never went outside the very centers of cities in USA, but there was a top gear episode where the crew was assaulted by hillbillies

I live in Georgia and you occasionally see lulzy rednecks here, but I have no real stories

For a summer job, I was working with a geological survey team in rural Northeastern Nevada collecting soil data, and to drive to this certain location we had to take a road that went through the private property of an isolationist Mormon family. After about 10 minutes of driving, we happened upon four or five middle aged looking fellows - none of whom were taller than 5'5" - and they were trying to pull a cow out of a muddy slough. My boss asked if we could help and they asked to use our truck to attempt to pull the cow from out the muck. They tied one end of a rope to the cow's neck and the other to the truck's front bumper so as to slowly reverse the truck and safely move the cow. But they ended up accelerating too quickly and completely tore the cow's head from its body. They didn't react at all, apart from thanking us for our help, and even offered us some of the cow's meat.

I'm black, and I used to live in Texas, and my brother went to school with a kid whose father had a huge beard and wore the same shirt everytime I saw him that was a huge picture of a Confederate flag that said under it, "Show me your X and I'll show you mine." His kid called my brother "a dumb nigger" at one of the little talent shows and his kid was expelled from the school on the spot and the father made this huge scene and I quote "Doze people shouldn't be at owa school anywho, cot dammit. Fuck this place."

At first I was scared shitless, then it became lulzy. I was 11 and my brother was 7 at the time. Left the south for New York, where now instead of being called nigger to my face, now people just make a concerted effort to walk across the street from me, and oddly enough, I can't blame them for all the shit I've seen blacks do around here.

Appalachian mountain range.

I was at a ski lodge in West Virginia. Just passing by some of the "Towns" is scary. I'd probably murder myself if I had to choose between that and life in West Virginia.

>>40529
I'm from West Virgina. It's not that bad. Maybe, down in Logan/Mingo/Boone which is the armpit of the world. The rest of the state may be rural and made up of small towns, but folks are very nice.

>>40483

You don't look like a gang-banger or some shit, do you? Why would a sane person want to walk across the street from a black person? I know everyone makes judgments based on race... but, like you pointed out, there is some past experience that allows that judgment to form. I am not saying you're "scary-looking" (I have no way to tell, lol) but what you said tells me that a lot of whites in NY (NYC?) live in fear of black on white crime.

I live in an ultra-rural hillbilly area (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) and Deer hunting is like a religion. A religion with a patron saint of NASCAR, cheap beer, Off-road vehicles, and piece-of-shit gas-guzzling pickup trucks. Almost everyone here is a filthy bigot too, despite most of them never seeing a black person in their lives.
>> Anonymous
>>40652

Upper Peninsula is great for visiting. It's really beautiful and relatively pristine. Especially Lake Superior.

That said, you couldn't pay me enough to live there. It's a cultural wasteland. 50% of the automobiles there are on cinderblocks in overgrown 'front yards.' (I use that term loosely) JCPenny is considered a high class store. Greasy Chinese food is considered international fare.

Holy crap. You're maybe the third person I've seen from West Virginia on here. I thought I was the only one for a while.

Odd things I've Seen in West Virginia.
1. If you see a guy walking up the road witha gun, don't worry. He's just going hunting.
2. Going hunting is equal to a doctors excuse for being absent from school.
3. Pepperoni Rolls are one of the best foods ever.
4. Like Canada, the milk in my schools came in bags.
5. My neighbor has punted a live deer over the side of a road. His sun has punted a deer of their front porch.
6. I new a guy in high school whose parents were cousins. I think their parents were cousins as well.
7. West Virginia is like a black hole. If you stay too long, you'll never escape. There are entire roads here populated by a single family. Cousins, grandparents, children, and the like all in one cluster of houses.

I guess I don't have weird stories really. I live outside of Clarksburg. I don't consider it very redneck, but anyone from an actual city would think we were. Aside from an inane love of riding four wheelers through large mud puddles, it's like most other places in the US.

My family has roots in rural Georgia.
When i was a kid we took a trip back to my dad's hometown area, and i went with him to look at some old abandoned farm buildings he recognized.
We thought we were alone, but this old redneck kind of hobbled out from behind this shack. You could tell he had spent the last few decades in a drunken stupor. He stared at us for a while, then looked up to the sky and mumbled "Gon' Rain." Then turned around and hobbled down the dirt road.
But it actually seemed like a nice place to live aside from there being no jobs whatsoever. Too bad it'll probably be bull-dozed and swallowed up by metro-Atlanta in a decade.

Also I thinks its dumb to think of us as African American and Irish or European American

I'm in west viginia for hiking fairly often. Townsfolk resist a bit, but are generally quite polite. Ive run into some scary looking Bear Hunters (no shirts, suspenders, fat, big beards) while backpacking, but they just nod and keep moving. Trying to engage them in conversation isnt recommended . Ive tried it once. They said something like 'just keep on movin' city boy.' I said 'You got it.'

Texas here. We have some of those on the border of Louisiana, can't say much about the west or north of the state, though.

South and central is all Mexican, so, very little rural here.

When I was 14, I went camping in north GA, in a scout reserve close to the appalachian foothills. While driving through the winding roads, my fellow boyscouts and I noticed a strange, delapidated shack located on the rolling hills of nearby farmland. It was around midnight, and upon passing the shack, we all saw a single, small red light inside of the clearly abandoned shack. For whatever reason, it really freaked us out, and I wanted to know what was inside there, although none of us could muster up the balls to check it out.

5 years later, I travelled up there with some friends to go camping. We set up camp while I recounted the brief story of the shed, as they were curious about it when we passed it. After we finished setting up, we drove over to the shed, parked, and hopped over the short wire fence that it was directly behind. The front door simply wouldn't open-- it wasn't boarded up, although the door apparently swung inwards, and from attempting to open it several times it became apparent that something was obstructing its path.
>> Anonymous
>>41482

We went around to the back of the shed, where we found a massive gash in its structure- large enough to fit into with minimal struggle, although, again, piles of useless junk and rotting clothes obstructed our path. We climbed over the shitheap and into the little shack, which we learned was composed of 4 rooms- a kitchen, a bedroom, a living room, and the strange room from which we entered in the back, the one filled with piles of junk. At first, nothing of interest was found, although we did find a light switch, which still worked, and still turned on a single white light bulb. The bedroom was perhaps the most horrid looking of all the rooms- large, fetid piles of clothing everywhere, decaying photographs, etc. The room had a distinctly awful "feel" to it, and because of that we turned our focus to it, and began searching through the room. Under some of the piles of clothes we found old Ku Klux Klan propoganda. The closet was packed tight full of shit-- clothes and rusty appliances, mostly. We dug it out, and noticed the floorboard beneath it seemed different than the rest of the wooden floor. We messed around with it a bit, and found that it was starting to become loose. Eventually, we were able to remove it. Immediately an intensely putrid smell (which had already been vague since we entered the shack) filled our nostrils. Because very little light was available at this part of the room, we were unable to make out anything but blackness at first. My friend had a flashlight on him, and shone it into the darkness. The light revealed what were obviously once human limbs, a human torso, and head (all severed and tightly packed Guro style) all headed to their final stage of decomposition. None of us slept well for a while after that.

My Godfather saw it in theaters and afterwards when on camping trips would bring a gun and make everyone he was with carry a whistle just in case something like that happened. Didn't help that he was camping along the same area where the story takes place.

Nope, while we were scared, none of us felt like we were in any actual danger. My ex-girlfriend wanted to call in the heavies, but ended up deciding she didn't want to deal with hours of speaking with the cops. At the time, I didn't have the morals to realize that this might help solve a murder. The body was so far decomposed that it wasn't immediately recognizable as human, so I'm not sure how much the police would have learned from examining the body anyhow, lest the potential murderer left blood, semen, and urine all over the corpse. Most organic evidence left by the perpetrator probably would've rotted away with the corpse's epidermis; that's what we figured, anyway. The biggest reason we left right away and didn't want to make an event of it is because after seeing it we just wanted to forget about it. Possibly because of that, I can see this event in retrospect as more interesting than horrifying in a life-altering way.

Glad you like it.

Well, I've got one strange mountain story. My father, back in the mid 80's, had his great uncle die. This great uncle owned a bunch of land, and my dad got a large chunk of the land in the will. He, and the lawyers, and some appraizers were going over the land soon after he got it. They found an old barn/storage building up in the woods somewhere. They looked inside of it, and it filled with satanic junk. Pentagrams, devil posters, some satanic metal band crap, and booze. My father came up a day or two later with a camcorder and the police to investigate. Well, the tape is scary as all hell. I saw it once when I was 5 or so. The tape decayed so it's not watchable anymore (dry rotted).

I've been in W.Va. my whole life, and this is by far the creepiest thing I've ever seen here.
