Amerifag wanting to move to britfagland Anonymous
How hard is it to find work and housing and just fit in?

I am a RN in America. How hard would it be to get certified in brittain?

What about applying for citizenship and all that jazz?

Is it best to just jump into a large city like London or a smaller village?

Probably pointing out the obvious, but cost of living is ridiculously high in London, unless you're prepared to put up with incredibly shit accommodation. Even then it's still expensive.

If you want to be near the capital, it's a lot more economical to base yourself somewhere in the outskirts - I live just southeast in Kent - it's only a 20min commute by train to get to central London too.

Also, immigration policies are pretty loose.

Britfag checking in. I don't know why you want to come here, it kind of sucks.

But regardless, you are going to need an assload of savings, probably. Not only is the pound (somehow) still a LOT stronger than the dollar (compared to the 1.5 dollars = 1 pound ghetto conversion rate I remember from the 90s) but the cost of living has skyrocketed recently even by our standards, and employment is becoming notoriously hard to find. You might need to live off your savings for a little while before you find a job. Nothing too drastic, but make sure you come with enough money to be unemployed for a month or two and still eat.

What are your skills? There are a few sectors here that are extremely short of manpower, and if you could fit into one you'd probably have little difficulty with immigration and get a job fairly fast.

I second this. I have no idea why you'd want to come to Britain but whatever...maybe you can tell us in your next post.

The problem right now is we don't really have that many jobs that foreigners can get.

You'll need to live here for 5 years before applying for citizenship but it doesn't take nearly as long as America's application process to go through.

You'll need a fuck load of savings due to the shitty dollar and overvalued pound, do NOT live in London. It's already too crowded and the accomodation prices are incredible.

btw what's an RN? Registered Nurse? If so, it would probably help you a lot when looking for a job.

If you've got enough money and brains about you to live in the suburbs, the UK can be a really good life.

Unless you meet the criteria of the new points system for highly skilled migrants, forget it.

Non EU immigrants have the choice of being highly skilled in their profession, or marrying a British citizen. I don't think RN's qualify.

RN's are in demand in most western countries. just make sure you can spell britain before attempting to move there

I'm quite positive an RN would be considered a skilled profession, healthcare professionals of any sort are always in demand.

Also homosexuals are always in demand

Not when we already have thousands and thousands of them from EU countries that don't need sponsored work visas. Employers in the UK have to pay for the immigrants visa so unless you are super amazing, they aren't going to go through the trouble for you when they can get someone else ready to work immediately.

if you move to the uk try living in Scotland. from what i understand its much cheeper than London. and i've noticed there seems to be some sort of influx of Americans in Glasgow.
