Google search "Princeton Russian course" and click on the first result (should be a blog) if you're serious about it. The guy who wrote that course released it on the net because they stopped using it. It's literally a free Princeton course with audio for every lesson, that would normally cost a fortune to attend. Sans the teacher and having to go to class obviously.

Then again, what do you mean by "basic spoken conversational" Russian? If you just want to learn a few phrases to help you get around or something, just get one of those travel guides or "Russian language for dummies" books from your local chapters.

http://www.russianlessons.net is a good free site for beginners.

Russian and Dutch are the hardest languages to learn as a foreigner, in my experience

I've been chipping away at Russian for 2 years now and I still don't speak it. Compare that to Hebrew or Mandarin which I could speak reasonably fluidly both in under 6 months.

Learn the alphabet anyways. It's not that hard.

Take classes. Go there for holiday after 2-3 years of learning.

Tough but epically expressive language. Alphabet is actually very easy and better than latin IMO
