Make sure you study Brazilian Portuguese and not that of Portugal.

Why's that?

hang on a sec op, why the fuck would you want to learn portuguese?

just learn french or spanish.

>>35226
because french/spanish is useless in brazil and most people there don't speak english
>> Anonymous
if you speak spanish you can be understood in Brazil I think

this is almost the same

the reason for learning the brazilian portuguese is that there are slight differences between them.

It's also because the Portuguese language is being reformed at the moment. They want to have a unified grammatical structure and way-of-speaking worldwide for all portuguese speaking countries (Angola, Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Cap-Verde etc.) This is a process that will take 4 or more years and the portuguese will be assimilated to it appears more like Brazilian portuguese, than Portuguese portuguese.

I learnt a little with rosetta stone, best methods of learning were a course with repetition every day by chatting/talking with brazilian people. Only that way can you learn it quickly and effectively.

I speak French and I can understand a lot of Italian.

If you know Spanish then you'll be able to get by in a Portuguese-speaking country, but you'll probably need a phrasebook.

Most of the people here don't have any idea of what they're saying,

You in particular.

op, this thread is full of dumb replies.

1) brazilians will not understand you (and vice versa) if you learn spanish or french (specially french). Spanish is similar to portuguese, but seriously, where are you from? If you're not used to a latin language, you'll speak spanish with a weird accent and people obviously wont understand a single word, since they cant even understand native spanish speakers... SPANISH IS SIMILAR TO PORTUGUESE ON READING, NOT SPEAKING. I speak portuguese, i went to Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile.. a lot of locals asked me where i was from.. they couldnt even notice that i was speaking portuguese, that surprised me.

Brazilians really aprecciate the fact that you tried to learn portuguese, no matter how fucked up your portuguese is. In 1 year you won't learn much, unless you get some portuguese class or you move to a country where people speak portuguese

I think learning portuguese is a waste of time. Make a br friend that speak english and walk arround with him, thats much more easy. Spanish is great and a lot of people speak it, french is for faggots.

It's only a waste of time if you study it when you intend on going to a spanish-speaking country. Obviously OP won't get around learning a little portuguese but we all know he won't because he is LAZ

There are some genuinely stupid people in this thread.

I was in Brazil for two months. In the large city of Belem, most people I encountered spoke some english. I knew no Portuguese, but had a rudimentary understanding of Spanish. This was adequate to exchange basic concepts and ideas with people. From what I was told by Brazilian natives, Brazilians can always understand Spanish, but Spanish speakers cannot understand Portuguese.
Also, if you look halfway decent, you will most likely get laid a few times. Fun fact, Brazil is the plastic surgery capital of the world. Oh yeah, watch out for aids.

>Make a br friend that speak English and walk around with him/her

I would be OP's friend/guide.

>Brazilians really aprecciate the fact that you tried to learn Portuguese

SO true.

PROTIP: don't got to the North par of the country looking for "human contact". Go there to see nature or whatever, but no sex. People there are ugly as hell. Also, STDs.
