although it's kind of hard to do this in the wintertime, walks around any of the more interesting areas of town are nice, even if you don't buy anything. in Manhattan: Chinatown, Museum Mile, Times Square/42nd St, Little Italy, SoHo, Greenwich Village. outside of Manhattan: Flushing, Jackson Heights, Coney Island/Brighton Beach, Astoria... idk in general i find Brooklyn kinda boring but whatevs. there's the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Prospect Park there though, which are both great in the springtime.
walking across bridges is also really nice. although again, hard to do in winter. the Brooklyn Bridge and the 59th St Bridge have especially stunning views.
i also find it fun to ride the above-ground subways; it's a good way of seeing the city and admiring the scenery. it's nice if you go in the middle of the afternoon when the trains are pretty empty; i like to get a seat at the very end of the train and sit and read. most trains go above ground outside of Manhattan (except the R, E, and F if i recall correctly?). another transportation-related thing: the Staten Island Ferry is free and runs 24/7... it doesn't go anywhere of interest but i find the ride really nice and relaxing, and you go right by the Statue of Liberty, so you get to see it without paying the zillion dollars to actually go to the statue.
any of the skyscraper observatories around the city are great, really amazing stuff, although it'll run you about $20 a ticket. i went to Top of the Rock for the first time last summer (after living in NYC for 5 years...) and it was great. definitely worth the $17.
i also second the Central Park recommendation. if you come in the summer, there's Shakespeare in the Park, a free Shakespeare festival that is excellent. there is always stuff going on in the Park to check out.

Museums ask for a donation, but you can give them like $1 and go in anyway.

Personal recommendations: Go see a late night show like conan obrien or something. those are free and are a fun time.

Walk the brooklyn bridge

Check out ground zero

hang around in times square

go to central park

the list goes on and on and on and all of these things are free or close to free to do.

theres too much shit though, you are going to want to budget some cash so you can do some epic things.

Brooklyn is kind of boring???

Brooklyn Heights has some of the most picturesque streets in the city, and the Brooklyn Promenade has a wonderful view of lower Manhattan.

Williamsburg is great for people watching. Walk down Bedford Ave, and window shop along the way.

Ice Skating in Prospect Park. Not nearly as crowded as rinks in Manhattan, and skate rental is pretty cheap.

Coney Island boardwalk.

Brooklyn Academy of Music in Fort Greene always has free shows.

I don't think Brooklyn is boring, I think you're just doing it wrong.

I'm not the OP, but I have a question.
I'm going to NYC from May 11 to 18.
Are there some special parades, festivals or something in that time? The last time I was in NYC was in October 2006 and nearly everyday there was a parade, festival or other party.

Brooklyn is where the smart people in NYC live. Manhattan is just a tourist trap. They just jack up the prices for everything because gullible travelers will pay for it.

Full of scenester faggotry. If you like Pythonesque humor where people walk around in clown suits with straight faces, you'll love williamsburg.

Take the 2 or 3 down to Court Street. Walk south until you reach Montague Street and walk west. Alternately, you can walk north until you real Middagh and walk west. These are the only two entrances to the Promenade. Kind of sucks. I think it should have one more. It's good at sunset, especially in summer. But there are ton more people then too.

c) Museum of the American Indian
d) Staten Island ferry
e) If on a nice day, try Hudson River Park or Central Park.
f) Go to times square
g) SUBWAY!
h) PATH "mine train ride", especially the ride on PATH's uptown line. (Downtown line departs from Ground Zero, which is still fun, but doesn't have as many curves.)

I took a day trip to NYC from Philly last summer (I live in California), and here's what I did:

-Bought a all-day Metrocard
-Subway to Coney Island (Don't take the N, the transfer to the F is worth it. The N is in a cut-out for most of Brooklyn, you see nothing but concrete walls. The F is elevated.)
-Hung out at Coney Island for a while, got a hot dog at nathans, rode the cyclone (i suggest using a sweatshirt or something as a pillow for your lower back. The cushioning is non-existent).
-Prospect Park. Hung out for a bit.
-battery park. there's an old fort there, it's pretty cool. decent view of the statue of liberty (probably the best you can get without parying for a ferry)
-Central Park for a while, too damn crowded. bought some socks because mine were soaked by this point. i'm not used to the humidity.
-Yankee Stadium. Nothing to do, really. Shitty neighborhood, too.
-Morningside Heights and Columbia, wandered aroud, peed in an alley because none of the buildings were open during the summer. There's a nice view of downtown from the top of morningside park
-times square. it looks exactly the same as it does on tv. kinda cool, though. very touristy.
-grand central. very cool.
-back to penn station and to philly

all in all it was about $30.

some other things to think about are checking out the big hotels. you can usually sit int he lobby for a while and use their bathrooms (always very nice). nobody will bother you.

I second those books, I have one for NY and DC, good practical information, though not easily accessible on the go. Get one of those pocket fold out maps to carry with you, or something with a subway map on it at least.
