I've done similar things, never in a city though.
I spent almost two months in the middle of no where in the South of France, hired a car and went all over... drove to Monaco, Spain, all over the mountains.
Last year I went to Thailand for a little over a month, I didn't move around much, I found a really cheap beach resort well off the tourist trail and chilled with the locals and other travellers. Some days I could walk a few kms along the beach, find a spot and then not see a single person for the rest of the day.
Have you paid for the hotel up front? That's a serious amount to drop on somewhere that you're probably not going to want to spend much time, other than sleeping. Craigslist is a good idea for sublets, especially if you can pay upfront... that way you'll really get to experience what's it's like to live that life, plus you can have people round for drinks and meals without blowing your cover.
