Cost? Anonymous
so /trv/, my friends and I have a dream of doing a ~4 week trip to Japan to film. Mind you this wouldn't be for a few years since we need to come up with a concrete plan + monies.

Per person costs?
Air fare ~ $1000
Lodging ~ $30 - $50/night, although we have Japanese friends we *might* be able to stay with for probably a few nights.
Food ~ ?
Transportation (probably be moving around a lot) ~ ?
Misc. spending money ~ ?

Does /trv/ know more?
pic not very related.

I would expect to pay more then that for lodging, but if you know its going to be 30-50 then great.

food is expensive as shit, I didn't count when I was over there but I was told to expect to pay about $50 a day on food, minimum. We did eat out every day though, and that probably jacked the cost up. then again, I don't know if you can cook where your staying. food might be just as expensive to cook it like that as well.

transportation, also alot. Again, I have no numbers, and I assume it would also depend on how often you went on a bullet train or just usual subway. you might be able to get like a week long pass to save money, I don't know.

misc. No clue, I'd say bring an extra grand per person just to be on the safe side. Shits not that expensive, plus the 100 yen stores have some great things to get surprisingly, but who knows what your trying to get after all.

all in all, its like>>63788said, 4-5K per person for each week, you should be fine.

I suspect that anon doesn't have much money. Save your nickels and go to Thailand. You can do it for 1/4 the cost of Japan, and actually stay for a month or two, as opposed to a forgettable 10 days. Please don't ask, OK, what about Thailand. Just lurk at thorntree, and mock and troll the faggots over there for a while, go to Thailand, get dreadlocks (plus points if white), walk around sneering at everyone, and spend 12 hours per day in an air conditioned internet cafe, 4 hours per day finding the cheapest place in SEA to eat, and the rest of the time getting ripped off by a freelance whore tour guide saleslady. (Oh Shi- that was me)

$20 a day is easily dooable

sure it's doable if you don't go anywhere, don't rat anything but cup ramen, sleep on the street and do nothing

If you are spending $50 on food in japan, you are eating at the wrong places.

How about cutting back on the lobster there buddy?

Airfare is better priced at an airfare website, though prices fluctuate a LOT over a "few years" so anything you find now likely wouldn't be relevant by the time your trip rolled around.

Your figures for lodging are pretty good for youth hostels/cheap ryokan.

You could get away with 20 bucks/day for food pretty comfortably, bring extra for the occasional nice meal out. Also, convenience stores are your friends.

Transportation: GET A RAIL PASS. JR Rail Passes (google it) are pricey, but they pay for themselves VERY quickly. They don't have a 4-week rail pass, either.

Misc: Depends on what you want. Can't help you there.

Since you've got some time before you get the money together, may as well learn the language, too. It's not as hard as some people make it out to be.

it is doable, if you're used to life standards of a hobo.

we kinda need to know what part of Japan.

OP here.

lol yea not much money, so that's why it's more of a future dream for my friends and I. A few years could = 4 to 6. Glad you had fun in Thailand though.

>>63961
thanks for the info. I'd have to iron out more details to see what duration rail pass my friends and I would need. I threw in the "Misc." in case I didn't cover something but I figure each individual can decide how much spending money to bring (maybe $500 for random shopping?). Oh and all of us have been taking Japanese for a few years now (high school level, inb4underageb&, I'm 18), although we're no where near good enough yet =P.

All our friends live in Osaka so we'd probably start out there and then move around every few days somewhere else.

Lolwhat

McDonalds is like $6 for a meal.

You can get bento at a reputable chain for $5 each.

That's $11 and two meals right there.

If you go to Japan to eat at mcdonalds you deserve to go broke.

You can get bento at the smaller bento places for less than 300 yen.

500 yen will buy you the biggest bowl of ramen you've ever seen in your life.

Get the fuck out of Tokyo and head to real Japan for fucks sake.

1000 really doesnt exist and with fuel supplies as they are it won't go down all that much

OP here. It definitely exists but usually involves fucking annoying layovers. You're right about the price not going down though.

I was in Japan for a month last summer and I spent something around 4k$. That includes air fare, rail pass, lodging, about 60-70cds, a new dsr-camera, tickets to summer sonic(150$ per day) and to few other gigs(around 30$ each) and fuck loads of drinks & fast food and other useless stuff.

OP here, thanks for the info. I figured that 4k could get us around np, as long as we research before hand.

I can vouch for liveinasia.com's Tokyo apartments, really good value for what you get, especially if there's more than one of you.

I had a dope supermarket downstairs, so food was cheap + as other's have said, eating local food is really cheap. Any imported food is going to cost you, but why drink Tropicana where there's so many local choices.

Most things you'll want to do are free or very cheap, Japan is more about people watching and sightseeing than 'attractions'.

>>64659
OP here, thanks for the tip, although what they're listing now is still more then finding cheap hostels. I'll keep it in mind though, never know if something really cheap will pop up.
Having an apartment would be fricken sweet tho.
