If you want a cheap, simple, effective GPS, the any of the etrex models are fine. However...
There is no reason to get a GPS as part of an "emergency kit." You would be much better served getting some decent maps, a good compass, and lots of training in how to use them. All a GPS really does is tell you where you are, and the maps are generally quite poor and/or difficult to use due to the small screen. Add that to the fact that it's dependent on batteries and you have a pretty poor tool for emergency situations. Basic land navigation skills (which means being really competent at it, not just knowing that a compass points northish) will get you through a whole lot more and will still serve you if your GPS batteries die or your map or compass get destroyed.
