If you eat only on the street and stay in hostels, you could do two weeks with less than $500. Bring a student ID and ask for a discount when traveling by bus (they might say it's not applicable for foreign students, but just try and convince them to give it to you, or that you know people who got the discount from it). If you're from the United States, it's cheaper to get a ride to the border and fly from a border city domestically than it is to fly internationally into Mexico. The area around Mexico City alone has lots of stuff in it's environs, and Chapultepec especially has quite a few great museums. Xochicalco and Monte Alban are relatively close too. Accept the fact that you'll have digestive problems and bring some Pepto Bismol. Street food that's cooked isn't bad, but I would avoid the horchata sold outside. And don't drink the water, obviously.
