They have a long and illustrious history as a major commercial center, they were a British Colony along with Malaya, and have a safely established banking and financial capacity. Its a geographically advantageous location, having direct access to the straits of Malacca, and has a substantial manufacturing capability, a combo which makes it the equivalent of a miniature Japan export-wise. The Singaporeans are very astute economically, so they haven't fucked up like the Japanese (in nearly every endeavor to recover the Japanese have been laughable failures).
