Honestly, 20 days in the US is not a lot of time. Now with that out of the way, my recommendation is to rent a car and explore a particular region of the country.

NY and you can also drive down to washington dc... greyhounds are cheap (buses), and there are trains if you plan ahead.

just go to california. visit san francisco--see all the stuff there (china town, that pier-number-something with all the shopping, the golden gate bridge, etc). Visit LA--hollywood, shopping, etc. Visit San Diego--the zoo, and I recommend a restaurant and brewery called "rock bottom." If you want to do the theme park thing, go to anaheim for disney land and universal studios.. cali has many, many options. plus it's near mountains and stuff, if you want to hike or mountain climb or (if it's colder) go skiing.

Where are you from? That might help.

go to florida
disney world
animal kingdom
epcot
mgm studios
universal studios
sea world
crocadile farms
the everglades
lots of beaches and surfshops

a lot of it is touristy to an extent, but its still a lot of fun, especially if you have a girlfreind or something. its easy to blow 20 days in florida.

I have to agree with this idea. I'm from the Midwest (Chicago), and I have to say I definitely like the west coast a lot better than the east coast (particularly NYC). I felt NYC was dirty, crowded, and way overrated. Yes, you're seeing monuments like the Statue of Liberty, but so is everyone else in the whole friggin world. Chances are you've seen the Statue of Liberty enough in movies and stuff to really get a feel for it.

Plus the weather in Cali is always awesome, it's generally cleaner, and you'll find some awesome beaches. I say visit Cali.

Text alone cannot properly convey my contempt for NYC. Why people would want to tour that overpriced, underhanded shithole is beyond me - I suppose if you're really into musicals.

D.C. is slightly better, which doesn't say much. The architecture is pleasant, but any place that would have been cool to visit now requires reservation/background check/cavity search. The holocaust museum there is incredible, but depressing as you might imagine.

I'm with the others that the west-coast is a much better spot to visit. If it's California, San Francisco has a much better feel than NYC, L.A. has plenty of events, San Diego is beautiful, and there's always Mexico.

I'm from san diego, and I agree that Cali is a great place to travel to. I would recommend Hawaii though, that's where most Californians go for vacations. If you don't mind a longer flight (assuming you're coming from Europe) that's the place to be during the summer. Just stay away from Oahu, I would suggest Maui or Kauai. Kauai might be the most beautiful place on earth, but it's a little boring. There's more to do on Maui. Kauai if you want to relax, Maui if you want entertainment.

I'd suggest NYC so that you can get past the touristy stuff and then really start to enjoy the city. Fagoots complaining about NYC probably never ventured outside of Times Square.

If you want a road trip then I'd suggest the western coast. LA -> San Fran -> Seattle. Drive along Pacific Coast Highway.

The cities themselves will not compare with NYC but the main draw is the road trip along Pacific Coast Highway. There really is no corollary for Pacific Coast Highway in the east coast.
