Does anyone have any experiences on Greyhound buses?I'm taking a 26 hour trip, and a friend today described them as "they all smell of piss, they're always late, the stations are infested with crack addicts and the seats are made of steel and nails. Mostly nails."
Is it really that bad?
>> Anonymous
they usually are always late. the seats aren't too bad. stations are most of the time, pretty ok...they don't smell like anything though.

You just have to put up with the idiots around you on the bus. I remember once there was a "rapper" pretending to talk to someone on his shitty cell phone, about he was on his was to lay down tracks in New Orelans. Mind you, we were going north and coming from San Francisco.

Yeah, I'm from the UK. I have my iPod, hopefully I'll be able to ignore society for a while...however, they battery probably only lasts around 10 hours max.

I'm going from Seattle to Edmonton...then back again 10 days later. I don't mind so much about the stations, the actual trip is gonna be the killer...like I said, hopefully my iPod will make it more bearable...

bring a cushion to sit on and some good headphones

Cushion's a good idea, thanks for that. I got some new headphones yesterday, so I'll be dead to the world, even without the music playing :P

no other stories from me of note. A decent looking 19-20ish year old girl sat next to me and fell asleep on my shoulder.

Other than that, nothing...all the busses I've ever been on have been late.
>> Anonymous
I had a 14 year old girl hold my hand for the entire 4 hour ride, I had no clue who she was and she didn't say a single word. She just sat down and grabbed my hand. I was 20 at the time, but GOD SHE WAS CUTE.

This is useful! They don't post tickets to the UK, so I have to arrive an hour early (about 6am) to pick up the tickets.

>>53870
Late isn't so bad...as long as I get an average seat, I'll be happy. I think. I hope...

like someone else said, get there early, and get a seat at the back.

I had something like that happen to me except it was two asian babes, and I mean babes, one sat beside me and the other sat in the seat across the isle. They spent the whole trip talking to me and the one sitting beside me did end up sleeping on my shoulder.

Too bad that their stop was before mine though. After they left some communist chick sat beside me, I fucking kid you not, she was wearing all olive green military esque clothing and she had a small soviet armpatch. She also fucking pulled out a book by Marx and read that for a bit.

After a bit she started a conversation with me and we talked for a couple hours and she ended up asking for my email and I jokingly told her that I was a fascist and she said that it was ok.

You can meet some weird ass people on those buses.

Heres a tip though, dress well enough, if you look normal and not like some homeless illegal fuck, normal people will probably choose to sit by you instead of all the other dirty ass fucks in the bus.

i'd tell you to bring a gun or knife in your carry on, but you live in the UK. Big brother's a bitch isn't he?

Yeah, England is ass. I'm getting outta here as soon as I can.

i've taken the greyhound numerous times. the problems i have are that there isnt ANY leg room, so if you're tall consider yourself warned. also, it can get stuffy, esp. if you're taking such a long trek. I would recommend taking a train, if possible. The bus tends to stop in every dipshit town along the way.

>>53883
The seats at the back are a tossup. If the bus is relatively new the door to the bathroom will be in good condition, and youll have a great time with tons of leg room.

However if its an older bus sometimes the doors to the bathroom arent in the best of condition and they don't stay closed. The entire back area will smell like piss.

OP here.
Looks like the best I can do is put my headphones in and maybe take some sleeping pills...

Thanks /trv/

Greyhound sounds like my kind of bus ride. Many other freaks to talk to, and relate to.

It's been a while since I did the bus thing. Thirteen hours.
At the depot were the transcontinentals loading up for the five day runs - not sure I'd like that.
We stopped every two hours for a piss and to change drivers. You really need to take a pillow and don't take a plastic, inflatable one. Busses are humid, even the air-conditioned ones. Unless your pillow can soak up your perspiration it's going to be bad.
One trip I sat next to this absolute honey all the way and we chatted and dozed through the night. Wonderful way to travel.

I'm with this guy, do NOT risk a seat in the back.

I was on a bus once (not greyhound, but similar poor people bus) where some unbelievably obese elderly black woman was helped to the toilet by her entire family (she couldn't really walk on her own). For some reason they put down a big sheet of plastic (which they had brought with them) on the toilet, maybe so she wouldn't have to touch the "germs" or something.

She shat and pissed and they helped her back to the seat. The journey back down the aisle took about 15 minutes with her resting on chairs (which looked like they were going to break from her weight), pressing her planet-sized ass into innocent people, huffing and puffing, and the black family yelling a lot back and forth.

Unfortunately, they left the plastic sheet, which was soaked in piss and shit and halfway covering the entire inside of the bathroom (floor, etc). They basically tried to stuff it down the toilet, realized that it was way too much plastic for the shitty bus toilet to handle, and left it half stuffed in, but still draped all over the place and dribbled with urine. And, either she broke the door due to her obesity, or it was already broken. Either way, it never closed after that.

So the entire bus was treated to the smell of shit and piss for the rest of the ride, and nobody could even use the bathroom. So we had to use toilets at the various stops along the way. Meanwhile obese black woman and family got off the bus fairly early in the trip.

Bring a lot of dramamine so you can sleep the whole time.

Hahah, yeah, I've been told to bring some kind of a sleeping aid. I was actually thinking about bringing some Febreeze or something, I guess if half the stories here are true, then everyone'll appreciate it.

Go by Amtrak. Sure, it's a slowpoke and late over 9000% of the time, but you get more vehicle for your money.
>> Anonymous
Why not take a flight? I mean, it'll cost more obviously but in my opinion, saving 20 hours and not having to deal with that shit would be well worth it...

I took three trips to Virginia from Arkansas to fuck some chick I met on FFXI (long story).
Three different trips, the first trip I took the train. Sucked fucking balls. Took forever. Had to go days without a shower. They only let us get off the fucking train like two times the entire trip, bad if you smoke. Plus you had to buy the shitty, insanely overpriced food on the train.
Went there on a bus the second time. Didn't take nearly as long. Got to stop at lots of interested places. Some famous turnpike I don't remember the name of and we stopped in DC. Much more bareable in my opinion.
Third trip was by plane, so obviously it didn't take as long but was the most expensive.
So all in all,
Train: Sucks ass. Way to expensive. Only good thing was we had a layover in Chicago for a couple of hours.
Bus: Not all that bad, I was expecting much worse. Didn't take as long as the train and was cheapest.
Plane: Obviously most expensive, but if you can afford it do it.

I can't afford to fly. This extra bit of the trip was last minute, and I'd had to borrow money from the parents anyway. Next time, I'll be going straight to Edmonton from the UK.

>>54218
I guess that doesn't sound so bad in comparison, hopefully I won't...die..

It's not about the comfort of the travel, it's about the cheap prices. Amiright?

I would normally agree wholeheartedly, however 26 hours is likely to drag on a bit.

Yeah, if you're going alone. I remember rolling blunts in the back of the bus.

I'm alone for two weeks before the bus ride, plus the bus ride.
