Seodaemun prison is creepy and has some disturbing, violent videos. Bring a camera. As I left, I saw a group of knee-high kids walk in with their schoolteacher, showing that the prison is also a useful exhibit of anti-Japanese propaganda. The signs inside don't tell of the prison's post-colonial history as a jail for Korean dissidents. More info here: http://everything2.com/e2node/Seodaemun%2520Prison

N Seoul Tower is good.

Koreans are currently holding massive anti-korean president rallies which are also anti-american. I haven't followed it for the last week or two, but they'd gotten more than 60,000 people at once and it had been building up to that level for over a month.

The rally is about whether Korea should import american beef, due to mad cow disease worries... but that's a story for another day.

A sizeable portion of their population is anti-japanese, even though they don't like to readily admit it, since it seems that they can't forget what happened between 1500s and 1945 (several massive japanese invasions, and horrible treatment of korean people in WW2). Nobody's angry at the germans now-a-days, but the koreans just can't seem to not be racist, in general. Lately anti-japanese sentiment has been "lowering" among the young population compared to the older, but there are still sizeable portions of any age group that are anti-japanese. I would estimate 30-50% from my limited experience are readily anti-japanese.

Koreans pronounce "beef" as "beep". No lie.

Also, Korean chicks ftw.

Ooh, bad luck. Seoul smells like complete ASS in the summer months. If you're staying there awhile though, you should now that the stench gets a lot more tolerable around mid-fall.

Don't go near any fans, no matter how hot it is there. They'll suck the oxygen from your lungs.

Study the subway system before you leave and when you get there get a T-money card so you can get on the subway and bus quickly. On the subway if you're sitting and an elderly person gets in, give them your seat. Same for bus. Bus drivers are crazy so hold on for your life. Also, on the escalator stay on the right if you're going to stand, the left is for walking. Have a good amount of cash on you, only about half of places take credit cards. Tons of shopping centers and markets. They'll probably ignore you if you're white, but sales people really try to get your attention and will try to sell you something from 10 feet away. If you eat soup with a group of people, you'll most likely all eat out of the same pot, prepare yourself. Places to see: North Seoul Tower, 63 Building (pic is from the top), Nam dae mun market, Deok Su Gung palace, Seoul Museum of History, World Cup Stadium. There's lots more I've forgotten.

I visited Korea back in November for "work", although it ended up being more of a sightseeing trip. Just a couple personal recommendations:
-Visit the Imperial Palace. It's really nice.
-Avoid the "American" district near the military base, unless you really have a thing for bootleg goods and transgender bars (picture related, some stranger gave us the wrong directions. Creepiest back street ever.)
-Check out the man-made river in town, especially at night. Google maps location of river start is http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=seoul,+south+korea&ie=UTF8&
ll=37.569077,126.978843&spn=0.003589,0.008132&t=h&z=18
-Don't be afraid to wander down back alleys and such in the nicer parts of the city, some of the more interesting places are off the beaten path.
-Don't drive if you can possibly help it. Use public transportation or Taxis (they're everywhere.)

Almost forgot, if you like electronics go to Yong San. There's a huge electronic market there.

In my opinion, it was pretty uninteresting, and the salesmen are annoying, they keep calling you, grabbing you by the arm, etc. to sell you whatever they have, but I'm not sure how they may treat you if you're white.

Let's hope I can get a 3G iPhone at one of those neato electronics markets. I was going to buy one from Rogers and cancel my contract, but they fucked that up pretty good for themselves.

Yeah, I didn't get any good pictures. None of the ones I have show the scope. It's like a huge warehouse with 4 floors just filled with different stores filled with all the electronics you can think of. There are also tons of games stores with modded systems, copied games, boot disks, etc. I got my R4 over there.

Has anyone experienced racism in Seoul? I am Canadian, so I'm hoping they won't hate me too much.

Not unless you decide to hang around old timers

Don't even worry about it - people 50+ will give you shit since you're "American"

koreans never heard of canada and would never even know you are form there.

Anyone who is white ==== America

I think most Koreans know what Canada is...

Hell, north Toronto is quickly being overrun by Korean immigrants (in before ZERG RUSH LOL).

As for the OP, if you don't like soju, you'd better learn to love it. Same goes for spicy food.

Why would they hate us, we saved them from the Japs and the Chinks

Or do you mean give you shit as in give you stuff

They're pretty nationalistic and they really don't like our military being there. It also doesn't help that there have been some rapes and that a few years ago there was a tank that ran over two junior high girls, killing them.

No one will hate you. Everyone I met was friendly to me and just walking down the street school age kids would say hi to me, just to speak English to an American. I was even surrounded by a group of school kids at a park asking me basic questions in English like how old I was and where I was from. Even if someone didn't like you, what are they going to say? Nobody speaks English well so if anything they'll just give you a dirty look.
