sup /trv/,

I'm going to France for a few months, but my knowledge of the language is extremely limited. Is the Rosetta Stone program useful, or should I get something else to study?
>> Anonymous
god dammit, couldn't you have posted this in one of the 9,000 other "I'm going to France" threads?

I'm not asking about France, I'm asking about the program.

Why are you complaining? The same could be said about almost every fucking thread we have. "What sites should I see, where do I get drunk to sexed wimminz, where do I find cheap airfare, etc."

I'm actually interested in this thread. Other languages that Rosetta Stone offers could be discussed, not to mention other language learning methods.

It is good, I used it for portuguese. It has reading, hearing, writing yourself, all in one. Very nice.

It can bring you to a level of communication that you could order something to drink at a restaurant, or talk to someone about the weather. To further your skills a course or talking to real french would be helpful though.

If you haven't noticed, not everyone in the world speaks english. When travelling, it can be helpful to know the language of the country you are visiting.

For example, asking a French man for directions who has been living in France for all his life will have a hard time understanding you if you ask for the way. In Russian. See?

Knowledge of different languages, cultures etc. are also important when travelling.

Ok newfag!

Frenchfag here.

French is indeed a complicated idiom. The best way to learn it is to get a French gf.

No worries, most of French speak English, as long as they're not 70 years old oldfags.

back to the original topic, you can find Rosetta Stone version 3 (The version with the voice recognition and all that shit) on Pirate Bay. I'm getting German levels 1-3 as a refresher from high school, but im not too sure if it comes with a textbook pdf. or what.

anyone happen to know if it comes with the pdf, and if not, is the text entirely necissary?

Rosetta Stone fucking sucks. It teaches you nothing. It just spouts out phrases and makes you click on the correct picture. No teaching in it whatsoever. Don't waste your money or your time torrenting it.

hadn't seen this before, thanks

there's no translation. It wants you to just instantly understand by getting it wrong over and over.

its okay for easy stuff, but not for overly complicated stuff.

Studying along with rosetta stone should be fine

If it can't do languages that use the roman alphabet correctly you might as well forget about Japanese and Chinese.

I find if you find a forum or something in french and have a guide handy, you can pick up stuff pretty fast.

http://frenchtutorial.com

this website I think is fantastic because it doesn't bother with bullshit phrases and instead teaches you the actual syntax of the language so you can actually use it.

I tried using it for Mandarin and fucking hated it, so I just moved to China instead. Playing with real little girls is a lot more fun than clicking on pictures.

It is a good supplement. Stuff you learn in Rosetta Stone are hard to forget, it is very intuitive. But it cannot replace a certain grasp of grammar and vocabulary lists.

If you just use it, it will slow you down.

I actually have used V3 for French. (thanks, piratebay) I've done the first two units, and, while it has been useful, it took me a long fucking time to get my head around the fact that there was a difference between casual and formal french, as well as the personal pronouns/verb forms for the different sets of people (first person, second person, third person plural, etc). The program doesn't really tell you WHY things are the way they are, which hurt me.

TLDR
It's good, but get a french friend to talk to as a supplement.
