sup /trv/lers.

I never really come to this board, but I thought maybe you guys could give me some insight.

I plan to temporarily move to LA in a month with a friend, to try and find some work for the winter. If things go really well, i'll end up staying.

my questions to those with knowledge of the area:
is it easy to find bullshit work that pays well enough to actually be able to save some of it? or will i have to live paycheck to paycheck?

are the stereotypes mostly true? is everyone there generally a vain ignorant annoying fashionista with too much money?

what else should I expect?

any of your knowledge on the area is greatly appreciated.

Comment too long. Clickhereto view the full text.

Fuck no.

Don't expect a miracle in LA, seriously you might even become a hobo. LA has so many homeless because people like you come down here and expect to "Make It". Eventually you lose your dreams, money, and all that time spent putting yourself out there and go crazy.

Stay Home. You have a better chance.

No, and Yes.

You won't get any of that in LA mostly a little bit in Hollywood, Burbank, Glendale & Beverly Hills

It's dirty, seriously LA is not pretty overall, the business section is OK. it's over run with poor underclass citizens & homeless.

>>also FYI, i'm 25, no degree, enjoy drinking and womens. easy come, easy go, you know.
Enjoy working at McDonalds, having cheap whores, and your watered down drinks.

thanks for judging me as some loser who wants to "make it in the big time in la" or some shit, asshole.

to get more into detail, the entire time i will be staying there i will have a pre-arranged hotel to stay in. I won't be paying for housing at all.
my friend is going out there to try and find film work, as he just finished a film degree. i figured i'd go along, and see if i find anything worthwhile over there. i'm not some dipshit kid with delusions of grandeur.

so what the fuck is your comment saying to me? cost of living is high, and jobs are hard to find? or what?

How to put this in a way you might understand...
When the price of a two bedroom house in So-California can buy you a 6 bedroom house with yard & pool in Texas, what the fuck do you think? Yes the cost of living is high, and It is hard to find good work with even a bachelors degree. You asked for input, this is REAL input, so don't be a little bitch about it.

only useful thing you've said to me. everything else is just BAWWW BAWWWWWWW

don't expect much. I've lived in LA all my life. It's not easy finding a job, even for those of us with degrees. You might get a minimum wage job but who can live on that here? After gas, food and other expenses there won't be anything left

Overall everyone is pretty tolerant and keeps to themselves here in my experience.

sorry dude, im from la too and pickins are mighty slim here. homeless, poor and criminal are the 3 things you'll find most here. a BA doesnt mean jack anymore....most people make a living making money of other people. have a set plan and somewhere to fall back on if you plan to come here, its not pretty.
ps, LA proper is a complete shithole and you'll probably never go there unless you have to goto court or something.

New guy to this thread...current resident of the Inland Empire (Rancho Cucamonga to be precise) with far too many years of LA-specific experience.

Others are right that it's tough here job-wise and expense-wise. If you're just looking for "bullshit work," have fun competing in a place that's ass-deep in cheap Mexican labor. Whether you're looking for grunt work or something in an office, you'd better be financially prepared to stick it out for a good long while if you want to stay. So many jobs here pretty much require knowing both Spanish and English that it's ridiculous, and most employers assume that, if you're not brown, you're expensive and too demanding.

Attitude-wise, I would call it more a sewer of people who are generally selfish, uncaring, shallow, and downright rude. Of course, you'll inevitably fall in with a group of friends who make things bearable. Never expect a friendly greeting in any store and don't be surprised if people don't return your "Hello" when you pass them on the street.

Unless there's some specific industry that you want to get into here, I would not plan on staying beyond the winter or however long your friend will put up with you. There's plenty of places to drink cheaper and find equal or better women...in fact, I personally find that LA area women come with the most baggage in the whole US. In other words, LA women will suck you dry, my friend, and I don't mean that in a good way.

I plan on getting out of here for good in 2009, and good riddance. If you come, I wish you a better time, but don't say that you haven't been warned. And, unless you're from Oregon or Washington, pray to the deity of your choice that The Big One doesn't hit during your stay because I guarantee you that it'll make what happened after Hurricane Katrina look like a little girl's tea party.

That's exactly how you will be judged by the locals in LA. That's exactly what they think of people who come from out-of-town, that you've come to LA to become some kind of big shot. If you have a cover story or a good reason why you're in town (my company sent me here, got a job with a local company, going to school, etc.) then they're are less judgemental.

Seriously, that's what it's really like.

Don't speak for everyone, wiseguy. I'm born and raised L.A. and I don't judge/sneer at any of the transplants. I do judge/sneer at the ones you cry, moan and whine about how this city kicked their ass and how much they hate it now. But won't fucking leave either.

Either piss or get off the pot, Jesus Christ already.

Other than those skidmarks, most people I know welcome out of towners pretty well.
