Destinations, work and saving up? Anonymous
I'm hoping to go travelling once I finish university in 2010/ 2011. I'm studying for a degree in social work, and so far I have about £1000 in savings after 1 year.

I'd like to move around from place to place, work for rent and travel expenses, etc., probably stay with a few close friends in Europe and the US as well as visit a few places on my own. And if I find a place I like maybe settle down and look for a social work job.

However, I know it's not going to be like in books and movies, it won't be easy and it'll be expensive. But what kind of jobs would be worth looking for? What places are likely to hire on the spot or relatively quickly when you don't have much experience and might only be there for a couple months? Where's best to stay- cheap hotels, motels, B&Bs, hostels etc?

Also I know the university does some placements. Some are just educational transfers, but there's work placements for things like American summer camps (sounds rewarding but a little restrictive) and work placements.

I know this is pretty vague and badly worded, just looking for a little pre-emptive advice.

there are tons of institutions in the u.s. that you could work at. they don't pay great, but no social work does. homes for troubled kids/teens are EASY to get jobs at if you have a degree and they are basically gateways to government jobs with more benefits/security. if i were you i would go to school in the u.s. get LCSW and become a therapist. huge $$ and easy work.

it probably takes 2 more years, but if you work for the government they will pay for most of the classes you need while paying you to work. normal post grad tuition will apply otherwise. school is expensive.

Are you traveling around the u.s.? a lot of hostels in the u.s. are cheap, but have a limit (like a week or a month) on how long you can stay. hostels are only located in bigger cities though, and expect to pay around 20 a night minimum. if you are into hostels, i would travel the west coast. 1000 GBP isn't going to go far, that's for sure. it might be enough to move to another city, but it's not enough to bounce around the u.s. for more than a month or so.

yeah, not sure. either traveling around or just one or two places. Hostels $20? that's not bad. But how much would it cost to stay in a motel room or just any cheap room/ appartment?
probably will be more than £1000 by the time I wanna do this anyway.
