I am thinking about visiting Hong Kong and Shanghai...How are they? Are they safe ? but are they all Commie list China?

Like will they block my websites and stuff?
Any MUST do things?

YES. In Hong Kong last year, there were 17 homicides for a population of 7 million people, for a ridiculously low rate of 0.24/100,000. Other rates of crime generally follow that pattern. Shanghai's crime I believe, isn't quite that low, but certainly comparable to western European cities.

HK is not governed by China, and is very free, so no. Using the internet is Shanghai however, some sites will be blocked.

Hong Kong is safe, so you wouldn't have to take any extra precautions or anything. It's also nice that you'll be able to get around town well with just English.

A *must* do in Hong Kong is to simply try every kinda food you see. If you don't like it, don't have any more of it, but it'd be a shame to miss out on anything.

Visit Southern Hong Kong Island; it's quite beautiful. Go to Shek-O, if only for the bus ride there. Ride on the upper deck of the double-decker bus. A decent beach and nice restaurants for a weekend stop. Stanely is close by if you wanna hit up some bars.

Head to Ngong Ping (super convenient by subway and gondola lift) and visit the Po Lin Monastery and Buddah statue. Skip the chintzy souvenir town and walk towards the statue, but (here comes a food recommendation) head left as you leave the 'town', towards the shop flying the Chinese flag. Delicious sweet tofu! It's so much better than it sounds.

HK is free, Shanghai will block some sites (wikipedia, bbc) like the rest of mainland China

But those are probably the best two cities to go, Shanghai is the most accustomed to foreigners and friendliest to "western" ideals
