How to be Homeless, Effectively Anonymous
Dear /trv/,

My question actually pertains to the adolescent notion of running away, and how I can accomplish this effectively.

First, here is the background story: I am a 20 year old female from Denver, Colorado, and I want nothing more than to travel. The problem is, my father will not allow me to keep any of the money I make from working. I cannot save any of it: it all goes to his bills. He is also emotionally abusive and manipulative.

In order to begin my life as an independent person –– to escape, if you will –– I have written a book, a novel. It is finished, and I have the entire thing on a little flash drive.

Here's what I want to do. I'd like to move to Seattle. I don't mind bumming it, not at all. I am not a fearful person, and I don't draw much attention to myself. I am not materialistic or needy.

Ultimately, my question is: How can I run away from home effectively? I don't see it happening conventionally. Any advice?

And on a final note, I do believe the book I've written will eventually help me succeed. I do realize that it will take time and work. I just need to get out of this city and this house.

If you have work-friends live with them for a while so you can work up some cash. Use the cash to get an apartment or whatever.

Child Services doesn't seem to apply any more. You can sue him for extortion, I think. That, or open up a new bank account and start siphoning off funds from your main account and depositing moderate portions of your paychecks there.

well, i wouldn't suggest hitch-hiking.

if your friends are up for it, a road trip would be significantly safer. grey hound would be an alternative.

as far as places to stay, a hostel is an option for staying in a new city until you can afford an apartment. it would be best if you actually knew someone in seattle tho.

if you're really taking the 'homeless' route: peanut butter, honey, a plastic 1 gallon container, and bagels are all cheap homeless food staples.

Go to your richest, most morally upstanding male friend and seduce him, then poke holes in the condoms or lie about taking birth control so you get pregnant. Be sure to cry about your father to him so he feels bad before you tell him you're pregnant. If he is a really upstanding gentleman he will let you live with him and will take care of the baby, at worst he'll be forced to pay child support. Since you'd be an unwed mother your father will either disown you or feel really bad and think that he raised you wrong and try to make up for it. You can't lose.

try and get a copy of crimethinc's evasion. although it was written a few years ago, it's about a guy who bums across and america and doesn't spend anything.

Seattle downtown is EXPENSIVE. It's the best city I've lived in, though. Love it.

Move in with a friend, or get a roommate. Craigslist. Just pack your shit and move there. Don't leave address info. Take control of your life.

Seattle is too expensive, try Portland or even Tacoma.

If you can come up with about $1000, you could get a passport, a visa, and a plane ticket to East Asia and teach English.

But being a hobo would be so much fucking cooler.

OP, is that you behind the balloon? You're cute.
Now show us your tits.

No legit teaching jobs in Japan (and probably Korea) without a degree. It's not even easy to get one in Japan if you have a degree anymore. I suppose the chinks will take what they can get.

OP i feel the same way. only not as oppressed. this is probably unrealistic but maybe you could travel to Asia-maybe somewhere such as India. Go to Goa and become a singer/dancer, make baked goods or find another niche that gets you enough money to live on (also bring enough of your own)
