I am a US Marine. Call me disillusioned, call me crazy, call me a coward, but I want to leave the country and escape into the world. I want to possibly go to Europe, somewhere Western, and start over. A new life, with a new outlook. It's not because I want to run away from the war, I don't mind going there (coincidentally I don't see how fighting in Iraq is any longer protecting American citizens.) I just am tired with my life, and where it's going. I have a full scholarship lined up, and a great family, a wonderful girlfriend whom I do love, and some great friends that I would want to keep for the rest of my life. But it still feels all empty, like I'm not going to be happy when I reach the end.

I honestly just want a simple life. I figure I could
find someone willing to offer me a place to stay and
food to eat in return for labor services. I would save
up money and over time afford my own home, and just live happily without any worries or obligations.

Obviously there are a few problems I'd need to overcome. First off, would there be any country willing to offer me citizenship if I'm labeled a deserter? I'm hoping the EU would, and nations like France, Italy, and most in Northern Europe are what I'm hoping for (Germany, Netherlands, Sweeden, Norway, etc) Would the US come and find me?

Are there any better ideas than the one I have? It is
a huge risk I know, and any better solutions would be
welcome.

What I am asking is this: is my plan feasable? Can I
make it work?

US authorities wouldn't bother chasing you down, but you'd have a VERY hard time getting citizenship/finding legal work in any European country, even ones who present themselves as being critical of the US and its foreign policy. Honestly, just finish your military term. It's a shitty thing to have to do, especially when it goes against your moral/political beliefs, but doing otherwise will be making your life extremely difficult. Seriously I sympathize, but still, bad idea.

Thanks a lot for the advice.

Good go fuck yourself.

how much time do you have left to serve? Finishing that and then running away to wherever would make things a lot easier, in my personal opinion. Plus, it would leave the door open to coming back if you ever wanted to (for whatever reason). Burning bridges is a rough way to go.

I've got upwards of 10 years to go, because of the ROTC obligation I've just made.

10 years to go? My God. I'm not familiar with how the US military works, but can't you resign/quit like civilians do?

Wow 10 years? Bearing in mind I have no idea how the Marine "contract" is spelled out but I'm assuming there are get out clauses but only under extreme circumstances (injury, mental health etc.)

Do consider that if you do desert, you will find going back to the US or stepping onto any US territory(i.e. US Virign Islands etc.) will immediately place legal burdens upon you. Essentially you will leave friends and family behind and the safe way to keep in touch is if they make the trips to see you wherever you are. Being an asylum seeker is very tough and you may even be prejudiced against in a system catering towards third world countries. You're American, you're "rich", you can stay at the back of the line.

My advice would be to try and work within the confines of your Marine obligations and seek out some sort of international relief work or posting. Do the Marines have an outreach programme? Build houses for the poor? Teach kids in villages? If you're Christian, talk to the Marine chaplain, maybe transfer to work with him, missionary work etc.

Again I have no idea but if you're a good marine, they might make an effort to keep you by accomodating you.

By the way its 4chan. Expect this:>>39046and just ignore it. You're lucky to have even one constructive reply.

What the hell? I personally know multiple marines/ex-marines, and they've had contracts that lasted about 2 years, unless they chose to reenlist. I don't know what the ROTC thing is you're talking about, but it sounds ridiculous. It's hard to believe that you couldn't at least get that shortened.

Oh well, you could always just shoot yourself in the leg. Pretty sure that'll get you an honorable discharge.

No, if you join you have to sign a unilateral contract with the most powerful force on Earth, you have to be a retard to do it.

Troll. No US armed force accepts longer than a 6 yr enlistment. ROTC commissions officers, which this
faggot clearly is not.

You sure don't know much about the US marines.
This is their "outreach programme". Will reach out and "teach" kids in villages from 500+ meters.

Seriously OP, I feel for you. My advice would be to try and get on a boat and head for Eastern Europe or Africa if you REALLY want to drop of the radar.

Neither do you, apparently. Chomsky, Russell, and Sartre must be very proud of their bastard child.

I 100% get what you are saying and I respect your drive for simplicity but it's a very bad idea to get on the wrong side of our incredibly fucked govt. They dont forgive or forget. I believe its not cowardice that motivates you but dont just run, when what you want to do is connect. You feel hollow because you are not part of your own life. Living inside a shell is safer but suffocates the self through lack of contact. you need to interact on a real level, feel a part of Life and you want to start simple. When I feel like that I go draw. draw what you see, dont worry if it looks like shit, its for the purpose of connecting you to your own perceptions. Good luck and get the fuck out of that contract as soon as you can.

If you don't feel that you'll be happy when everything's all said and done, by all means, do what you must to find your way! Our conscience (or God, depending on your religious affiliation) has a funny way of redirecting our interests.

I don't think the US would come looking for you unless you were to piss off some corporate or political bigwig. I encourage you to find what you're looking for and to never, under any circumstance, give up or "settle" for anything you don't think you'll be satisfied with.

God luck, mate.

clarify: I dont think they would hunt you down, its just that, 40 years later you have become a totally different person and they'll still jail you when you set foot on us soil. it blows not being able to ever ever ever see anyone you loved - especially if they get sick and cant visit :(

I might be able to give some advice. I joined the military to travel, go figure I got stationed in Nebraska and only travelled to Iraq.
Get an honorable discharge,
Get a contractor job over seas
Tough that shit out for a year or two, save $100-200k

Then, you can seek a job as a GS worker still working for the government overseas (IT work is big, but whats your specialty?)

Or, if you just want to fuck off, you'll have enouhg cash to do so for a good long while. Go to a lesser touristed country that's still nice, and where the dollar is still powerful.

I wouldve said Slovenia, but they just went on the Euro. Japan is always a good choice because their economy will mirror ours for at least 20 years. Ask away and I will answer.

I've been in your shoes.

BS, I'm a Marine and I've never heard of a 10 year contract ever. Do some research before you try some faggy troll topic. Plus, it's easy to get out of the military, you just gotta suck some dude's dick, and they kick you out for being a homo.
>> Milfag deux.
Btw to all you faggots crying troll, you can enlist for 20 years if you want to, in the Air Force at least. Trust me, theyre MOAR than willing to let you sign your life away, lol.
