Is traveling as a U.S. citizen really as horrible as it is made out to be? I'm planning on a New Zealand trip next year, but before I do, my mom (Canadian born) wants me to do the citizenship stuff so I can get a Canadian passport. Apparently in the name of not being universally hated outside the U.S. However, this can take up to a year to process, and I don't want to wait that long to go on my trip. Should I go through the process of retaining my Candian citizenship and passport, or should I just get an American one and be done with it?

that's pretty retarded. it's not as if you will be showing your passport to everyone you encounter

I believe the idea was to pretend I'm Canadian or something.

Fuck it though, too much trouble (and money) than its worth. I'll stick with the U.S. of A.

from a purely pragmatic view point it's a waste of time

UNLESS you are trying to get a visa or whatever
and NZ or a country you're planning on going to lets Canadian citizens in more easily. There was a big table that showed what the status was for each country if I could find it...

Also you're indistinguishable from Canadians unless you go up to everyone and present yourself as JOHN, from AMERICA.

if you ever find it, post it as a new thread or something, I check this place often enough so I won't miss it, plus these boards move really slow anyway so it's very unlikely I'll miss it

I went to London, France and Rome last year. I had no trouble. Everyone likes Americans because we throw our money at them. Well, they pretend to like us at least. I only got one guy, clearly middle eastern, who yelled "Go back to America, with your George Bush!" at me while walking past. I just replied with, "I'll go back as soon as you go back to Iraq, dumbshit" and he kept on walking. This was in London.

But make sure to be polite, and don't be all loud like an asshole. That's what gives it away. Americans tend to be loud and never shut the fuck up.

OK I didn't find the table but this is just as good or better. The list of countries you can get in without using a visa is about the same however the LENGTH of time you may stay after without a visa that is different.

for example in Europe if you have can. passport you can stay
3 months in a half year
however with a US passport you can stay
90 days in a 180 day period
... OK bad example.

Nevertheless it's worth checking out the countries you're interested in since what the wiki says and what the official page says may differ. Another thing to do is ascertain what the modalities are in case you do want to acquire a visa.

OP here, thanks for the info about Visa length, that might change my decision.

I've traveled to Germany, Italy, Mexico, France, and Panama...never had any trouble. Once you go through customs, they don't really care about you anymore.
