Hey /trv/,

Anyone here had any experience with Hostelling International? Thinking about joining up but I'd like to hear what /trv/ thinks of them first/ Pic related.

HI is like the AAA of hostels. Find one marked HI and you're more or less guaranteed clean sheets and night security. The membership is worth it if you'll be staying at a hostel more than a few times in your lifetime. I think HI organizes trips and other such things, but the membership is by and large just a discount card. But just like the nicest hotels have no regard for AAA-certification, the nicest hostels probably won't bear the mark of HI. And some of the hostels with the most to offer are far too lax with services to be considered HI-grade. So basically, seeing HI on a hostel is a nice little luxury if you are cold, hungry and have no time for bullshit. But if you restrict yourself to HI hostels, you might miss a bit of the charm of the locale.

i agree. i stayed in some HI hostels whilst travelling around the states , and found that they did gurentee a good bed and security , but were much less fun and a little more expensive then some of the indipendent hostels. Its a little different here in europe however , where most HI hostels are Indipendents that are part of large hostelling organisations and are only loosely affiliated to HI. plus , unlike the states , they are absoloutlely everwhere. there are about 300 in germany alone , and if your backpacking , they can be a god send. Id go for it , its good deal wherever you are , if only that you can bases your travelling around their hostels

where do you plan on going?

It's cliched, but I'm going to Japan over the new year. I've stayed in a hostel in Japan before but not in the places I'm going (Osaka and Tokyo)
