Hey /trv, I'm thinking of moving out of state... What are some pros and cons when it comes to cities? I'm thinking about New York City, Chicago, and maybe (but a very far shot) Hollywood or San Francisco. I just wanna know what some have that others don't.
>> Anonymous
Don't know about the others but if you wanna move to Hollywood..don't. It's not as good as everyone makes it seem. Unless you're really loaded then you can live in west hollywood with all the jews and gays

Yeah, hollywood is definitely a long shot, and i was only thinking about it because of my photography career, which is why im looking into big cities.

How hard is it to get a job without college in Portland?

LA is boss. Just become misanthropic, get it out the way and enjoy the city of fallen angels. But if Hollywood is the specific area you want to reside in...buy a fucking butterfly knife or a tazer.

Seriously.

I literally started a reply with "Hollywood is pretty boss". What the fuck anon?

Seriously though, it's nice here, at least come visit at some point.

Stay out of San Fran. Actually stay out of the Bay Area.

The plant life and such feel just too artificial to me. They last all season.

OP here

What's it like to live in NYC?

I've heard so many good things, but everything i read only talks about things you can see while visiting. I want to MOVE though...

I know it's busy, and i've heard all these crazy horror stories, but if im not like, in the ghetto, it should be alright for the most part, right?

If your moving here from some lesser part of the country (any part) you'll only be able to afford the ghetto. But our crime rate is lower than Provo, Utah's. Only our murder rate is high and thats because young negro males like to kill each other and we don't want to stop them.

I'd be coming from right near Orlando, Florida.

Jesus why would you want to move?

I've been working at Disney for the semester and I don't wanna go home. >_>

I hate Disney.

Disney World is great for the first few visits, and again when you bring your kids there, but for the LONG interval in between, you'd be stuck in the Disney company town in the smelly, swampy center of Florida. That's like EFG's dream.

Hahaha, i guess it's like one of those things where you don't like what you've got. It's like women and their hair. Always want someone elses hair even if theirs is perfect. xD

New York is, IMO, kind of a hellish city to live in. the pace of life here is intense. everything you do, even your everyday routine, takes twice as much energy as it would in more rural areas or even in smaller cities. just dealing with and processing all the people, the buildings, getting from place to place... after while, it really starts to grind away at your soul, haha. as soon as i leave the city my creativity and ambition blossoms -- the weight of this huge, teeming civilization really, noticeably bears down on you. my first few years living here were great. but after 5 years of this place, i'm ready to leave.

if you enjoy a faster pace of life and enjoy being around lots of people, you might like it here. lots of people live here, voluntarily, their entire lives and love it. and there are certainly lots of amazing things about the city, obviously. but if you're a quiet, keep-to-yourself kind of person like i am, you will really yearn for true peace and quiet after awhile.

wikitravel seems to have a massive hardon for Chicago.

I agree totally. Some cities, like Boston, Quebec City, and Chicago, I find a lot more fun to visit.

NYC is the only choice if you aren't a weak faggot. Forget about Manhattan though. Look into Queens or some places in Brooklyn.

It can be overwhelming if you didn't grow up with it. But there are quiet places in the outer boroughs.
>>19097was probably too much of a pussy to leave Manhattan.

wrong. i live in Queens. thanks for trying.

God, you're right. They say some seriously masturbatory shit in that article.

"Chicago is the home of the blues and the truth of jazz, the heart of comedy and the idea of the skyscraper. Here, the age of railroads found its center, and airplanes followed suit. Butcher of hogs and believer in progress, it is one of the world's great cities"

Boston is nothing but a college town, Chicago is depressing and filled with AIDS-ridden niggers and Quebec is cold and french

New York is the best city in the world, its a great place to live. Theres always something to do and there are plenty of high paying jobs. People who don't like it live in their mother's basement because they fear people and the outdoors so if they ever decided to move it would be to Maine.

what a coincidence I was just thinking about how much I hate living in the bay area, it sucks, sucks, sucks.

Wow. That's really fucking depressing, man. Some people just aren't cut out for this city.

New York has dichotomy. You can be in the center of a canyon of skyscrapers, hop on a train, and 30 minutes later be in a forest in the middle of Prospect Park, or on a quiet residential street in Riverdale. I live in Brooklyn and I have my own back yard (really more of a courtyard) but I'm still only one express train stop from Canal St.

If you haven't found what you're looking for here, you're simply not looking hard enough.

You speak like someone who's lived in NYC for a long time. Let me tell you, even the "rural" parts of the NYC metro area are equivalent to the most developed parts of northern New England. In a way, NYC is like Disney World. You can find a FAKE version of anything there.
