IN EUROPE & AUSTRALIA.

WHEN YOU GET A BRAIN TUMOUR OR ANYTHING WRONG WITH YOU.

THE GOVERNMENT COVERS THE FULL COST OF IT.

So when you get a brain tumour then get a $300,000 bill for the neuro surgery think to yourself "If only I lived in Europe"

also, in Australia and you have a baby the government gives you $10,000. and if you buy a house the government helps out with $15,000. If you're black the government gives you $300 a week. JUST FOR BEING BLACK. Racist? I don't see any black people complaining.

If you have ADD {Attention Defisite) you get $300 a week.
If you've under 18 and living out of home the government gives you $250 a week.
If you have children the government gives you money.

The government gives you money for any reason, isn't it great?

As much as Americans say "All our states have very different cultures!" I really doubt they have anywhere near the history, language and culture that the European nations have between them. Plus LOL at American "culture".

The worst part of living in Europe is having to wait a few months longer for video games to get released. That is a serious fucking issue.
>> Anonymous
Well, as an American living in Europe, I hope I can give you some things to think about.

Healthcare - Seems to be hot button, here's my take. Sure, it's spiffy that healthcare here is free. The problem is a friend of mine dropped out of school 3 or 4 months ago to go to rehab (dude is fucked up, major) and he's still waiting to get in. He gets in mid March, and right now, he's doing drugs like crazy. There appears to be a wait time in order to get service. If you're patient, it's free, but... well you know. I'm biased with this whole healthcare thing since I do come from a wealthy family, and both my parents have strong careers in the medical field.
Food- Major one for me. America wins, hands down. European food is some of the blandest stuff I have ever eaten, and it sucks. I miss food with flavor, and zest. Also, I miss having so many choices when I go into a grocery store. The US has so many cultures represented that you can find great food in any style, and authentic, if you know where to look.
>> Anonymous
Transportation - Europe does a good job with it. It's very easy to get around, and for a good price. I feel like in the US I'm restricted to either driving, taking a bus, or flying. I wish the US utilized trains more often.

I have to go eat right now, actually, but if you have some things you want me to compare, I'd be more than happy to give you my honest opinion.

See, I'm TRYING to find a reason to hate this place, but when we got $1600 to let the government rape our land last year, and EVERY CITIZEN OF ALASKA got that same amount... it's hard to complain, y'know?

And the culture here hasn't been stomped out. There's hundreds of programs for natives to keep them going strong. Drive 100 miles from Anchorage and you've got yourself villages that sustain themselves on whale hunting and fishing alone.

Britain is okay, its really socialist now though. If you fuck up the government will buy you a house, furnish it, subsidise your education, find you a job. The problem is you pay out your ass with taxes though. Also most people are cold and withdrawn.
The main reason I dislike the Country is the fucking weather, I honestly miss the sun, its been foggy, overcast or raining for a good two weeks, even in summer it rains for months on end.

France is Socialist too, but less so in some places. Bread is subsidised by the government if you like it. Problem is people will be a complete dick to you if you dont speak french, and sometimes even if you do speak it.

However Scandinavia is the best area ever. Its clean, wealthy, mellow, jobs come easy. I like Sweden but its fucking expensive.

The States are pretty shit, cant get sick, police are up your arse all the time, Cities are dangerous, people are either rude or creepily friendly, food comes in two flavours, over salted or over sugared. I got to shoot a gun though!

I don't live in America, but so far the only thing I envy that's unique to the USA is:
- The shopping (there's just soo many good deals that say: ships only to the USA, or assrape if shipped elsewhere)
- Unique niche services that are US only: earth class mail, iphone service, whole foods, zecco trading, etc
- Lower taxes

But major things, like cheaper housing, better health care, lack of police state paranoia & drug enforcement, cheaper food, cheaper education make it that I don't mind so much.

If I wanted to start a business in the USA, it's also alot more free flowing :)
>> Anonymous
>>6203
I'm sure I'll get trolled to hell for this, but it really depends on where you are in the US. Saying that each state has a different culture in a eurothink kind of way would be ridiculous. However, every state is fairly different from even its neighbors, and even then there are broad differences between cities.

Classifying the country as just 'America' would be like classifying all of Europe under 'EU', and then talking about one or two countries. I had a radically different time in Spain than I did in France than I did in Italy.

Of the three, I liked Italy best, with Spain as a close second. I thought France had great culture in its cities but in general I thought the people didn't look very spirited at all, I kept being stopped by Middle Easterners asking for handouts, the food didn't fit my tastes, and even the glitz looked rather drab relative to itself. On the other hand I thought Spain and Italy's food was excellent.

Shit yeah, if you plan on living in the US, go with Minnesota, preferably the suburbs in the urban highway loop, you can go three miles in one direction and be in the city, or 3 miles in the other and be in the farmlands, great hunting and fishing. most europeans don't realize that there are effectively two americas. one with all the smart, cultured people (mostly in the big cities and surrounding areas), and another with all the stupid xenophobic assholes.

and it's the smart ones that travel. so that american you're beating the shit out of is most likely more in tune with your opinions than you may think.

you might hear the term "united states" and think it's one big solid block of country, but it's actually 50 different "countries" under the flag of one union. there's different local culture, different accents, different enclaves of people, different political statistics, and each state even has its own flag.

I live in Oslo, Norway, and honestly I cant see what youre talking about. I have met lots of american people here, and they were all welcomed. In fact.. I think most norwegian people hate american foreign policy, and not americans as people. Most scandinavians are quite humble, and think its kinda cool when americans wanna come to our little countrys. ITT the most extreme and stupit opinions are written in caps lock, and for some reason taken seriously. I visited america last summer, and I loved it. Well, I only visited NYC and washington DC, and I dont know if that actually counts as visiting America.. But, the thing that suprised me the most was that the people, were JUST like home in Oslo. So was the climat, and everything. It was like I never left norway, but simply went to a much, much bigger city. That made me realize how simmilar we are.. We are all the same, just seperated by water. The differences from norway and three hours south with a car is bigger than the difference 8 hours west by plane.

Doesnt this just mean that 50 states under one nation is a consept that is not working? You are so different that sharing a government is a lost case. To me it sounds like a bad idea from the start. Heh, Oslo is much different from Bergen =P Agreeing with you.

I had one bad experience in Oslo the very first night I was in Norway. I was walking back to my hotel when some random guy came up to me. I was about 16 at the time. He was talking very fast, and my norwegian wasn't up to snuff at the time so I just kept saying "Jeg forstør ikke!" (My spelling sucks) and he said "Hvor komme du fra?" "USA" and he spit on me and called me something bad, I dunno what he said but it was not friendly at all. Then a shop owner ran out of his place and chased him off, but it was a really, really bad way to start a vacation. Otherwise I've found Oslo to be very enjoyable, plus the dialect is much easier to understand than in Bergen ;-)
>> Anonymous
>>6413

I think the differences within Oslo itself are pretty significant by themselves.

Being an immigrant in the more affluent west Oslo suburbs (Bærum that is), it's very different than in the poorer areas of east Oslo.

On a related note, it's interesting for me to note how I and other immigrants are treated here contra east Oslo. I feel that we're much more integrated here, and as a result, I got the opportunity to attend one of the highest ranked high schools in the country. I don't think this would've happened were I dumped into the slums of east Oslo, and in fact, I have relatives there setting both a pretty big contrast to Bærum and a good example of what I'm talking about. Whenever I visit them, it feels like the whole area imposes some "us against them" mentality with the Norwegians being against the foreigners and vice versa, which, conversely, I think is the driving force behind a lot of the crime and poverty among the immigrants in the area. In Bærum, I rarely even think about being a foreigner, but in east Oslo it's ubiquitous and unavoidable.

But I digress. On the topic of Americans in Norway, I get the feeling that here in Bærum, they're not despised either, but rather looked down upon, as if they're ignorant and don't know any better. Ironically, this fits Bærum's arrogant and snobby stereotype... oh well.

I know what youre saying, but I just dont buy it as an argument.. The fact is that most big cities have a west- and east side similar to that of Oslo. Also, it seems like you were here in the late 90es. Things are changing.. Take Grünerløkka for example. It used to be the very east of east side oslo, but now it an artsy part of town where cultural differences are set aside, and all kinds of people live together. Rich, poore, muslim, christian, atheist.. Its a part of town that serves as a shrine to celebrate diversity. I think the growth of Grünerløkka is reflected in the mind and opinions of the average person in Oslo.

Admittedly, I'm not really very up-to-date on the cultural changes of most of Oslo. I'm referring more to Holmlia and similar areas than the general 'east Oslo'.

Holmlia has been quite infamous ever since a guy named Banjamin was stabbed to death by some white kids. That started a chain reaction of hate, which has faded, but still.. people tend to stick to their own kind. The whole integration question is a hard one to solve, and I think it requires a lot of work from all sides. It seems to me like some pars of the US has made it happen with great success, though, so it cant be impossible.

DC and NYC are not really representative of America at all. Maybe NYC in all its cultural subsections, but primarily the liberal, wealthier types. The MD DC VA area is actually very close to SoCal in terms of the way people are, but not climate. But there is quite a bit of crime there also.

America is everything really, theres no real singular stereotype you can put on the country, since wherever you go the culture is different, and in those different areas the culture can change within a matter of 20 miles (for example, I live in a wealthy area with a golf course and BMWs, but 5 miles from me is a poor primarily black slum with tons of crime, and there are also spots of backwoods, redneck areas within 2 miles of me. Three of the most black cities in America (Baltimore, Philly, DC) are within 2hrs of me but the KKK capital of the world (Rising Sun, MD) is 30 Min from me. Thats basically America for you.

the stereotype mostly associated with the average American (not politicians) is that of the "Poor White Trash" as we call it here.

Eurofag here. Scandinavian here. I like europe. It's the land of culture. The old world. Shakespeare and mozart, beethoven and sibelius. Also, like>>5770said, europa created america. If you are not native americna, you can thanks us that you live there.
Also, scandinavia is a great place to live. Fresh air, bright snow. Midnight sun and polar night and such.

i go to school in NYC. in my second semester at college i had a professor who was really politically passionate/active and extremely liberal; basically your stereotypical Bush-hating college professor. one day one of my classmates asked him why, if he disliked America so much, did he still live here? he replied that he didn't live in America: he lived in New York.
