I was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia and since my conception I have only been within a 90 mile radius of my home. My mother was an army brat, so she lived in Iran, Germany, Seattle, etc. before she was even in high school. My father, on the other hand, dropped out of college and became a truck driver. He has been to every US state, every province/territory of Canada, and Mexico many times during his business.

I find myself a freshman in college and the farthest I've even been from my shitty, conceited middle-Georgia home is to the Florida Gulf Coast. I have always wanted to travel but my parents are nothing less than sheer-terrified for me to go anywhere. I missed so many school trips because my parents didn't want -insert random terrorist attack- to happen.

Hell, I have an eight mile drive to school everyday and they call me on the drive to, the drive home, and even when I'm in school to make sure I made it there alright... That's a bit overprotective, right?

All of my friends have been SOMEWHERE, I mean, I've never been outside 50 miles of the Georgia border. Meanwhile, they had already been to the UK, Puerto Rico, west coast USA, India, etc. all before we even got into high school together.

I really just want to travel. I want to visit places; Svalbard, the Solomon Islands, Mozambique, Madagascar, South Africa, Australia, the list goes on and on...

However, even though I have earned my income, my parent's refuse to let me buy a passport. They keep track on my bank account to make sure that every bit of spending is justified on something other than travel.

What do I do /trv/? I want to leave this stupid redneck, racist town and see the world. Help me please, I want to leave here.

In the name of the best within you, do not sacrifice this world to those who are its worst. In the name of the values that keep you alive, do not let your vision of man be distorted by the ugly, the cowardly, the mindless in those who have never achieved his title. Do not lose your knowledge that man's proper estate is an upright posture, an intransigent mind and a step that travels unlimited roads. Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it's yours.

I'm from GA as well, went to college there as well. My senior year I had designs to study in Japan for 3 months and then 9/11 happened and my parents said no.

I've regretted it ever since.

You are young, there will be time to break away once you have an apartment and it's your own roof. You can kick those silly rules to the curb after that.
