My girlfriend and her entire family (sisters, brother, and mother) are horrified of flying.
In their family, they don't know anyone aside from me that's even been on a plane. They said they've always been skeptical, and I feel as though they are so afraid from a combination of negative and horrifying stories, the fact that it's so high in the air, and that you have no control over anything should something go wrong.
When confronted with other such fears comparable to this one, my girlfriend will completely mentally break down, cry, and do anything to get out.
In an attempt to get her over it, I'm simply going to force her on a plane. I'm going to do three flights, the first a nice and semi-short trip to somewhere close to show how smooth it can be. The next one I'll intentionally aim for a rough ride, hopefully during a storm sometime, to show her that rides can be rough but still safe. And then yet another calm and smooth ride, and hopefully I can make it a long trip.
I can't predict turbulence, but meteorologists can predict storms. I hope it works well, we'll be doing it within the year.
