Tokyo over the summer Anonymous
Hey /trv/ I'm going to Tokyo this summer in July to stay with some friends from college.

I've never been out of the country before, or booked my own flight, so I have a few questions.

How far in advance should I book the flight? What airline? I've been searching random travel sites, but I bet you anons have some awesome travel secrets.

Also, anywhere cool in Tokyo to go to. I'm up for anything.

You should have booked your flight yesterday. Seriously the price only goes up every day you wait

Listen to this anon. Book it ASAP. I usually go to one of the travel sites. I prefer Orbitz, though I've never booked internationally through them.

I also like Continental Airlines. But, this is based upon the fact that there is no obvious references to America in the name. So I feel safer thinking that it won't be hijacked or anything. Plus, they really are a great airline. I've never had any problems with them.

ANA is pretty much the best airline you can use to fly to Japan, Delta is pretty much the worst. www.kayak.com is a good dplace to go.

Second on Kayak.

I don't know where you're from OP, but if you're an American Northwest tends to have the cheapest flights to Tokyo departing from America. But again, check on kayak to be sure you're getting the lowest fare.

And booking sooner rather than later is a good idea. Generally prices are at their cheapest 2-3 months before departure, although this can vary widely (airline ticketing is very fickle, and seemingly arbitrary). Be sure to check on multiple dates for your flight for the cheapest fare.

Listen to these two, with the exception of Orbitz, terrible service IMO.

Oh, and Kayak is usually ok, but sometimes you'll get insane prices, so try other sites too, like Expedia, etc.

http://cheapflights.com is good for finding cheap flights if you wait too long, http://airtreks.com is also nice because its just a search engine of flights, i wouldnt wait around too long for going though, considering if you do everyone else might get a seat before you

I went to japan last summer, actually, i'd recommend definitely walking around in Harajuku for at least a whole day, if you like people-watching. go to the clubs at Roppongi. and this might be a bit out of your way, but go to enoshima beach and be sure to eat the weird little balls of fried baby sardines, they're delicious. tokyo disneyland aint' bad either but it's probably too american for what you're wanting in japan.

ANA has hotter flight attendants than JAL.
JAL's are old and bitchy.

Alright! Thanks for the tips guys!

I'll be booking my flight at the end of this week once I'm done with testing hell and can figure out exactly which dates I'm planning on going. (someone IRL told me that weekends are more expensive, so I'm going to try a few different dates out)

So far, I've got plans to visit shinjuku, harajuku, maybe tokyo disney (my god the japanese love that place for some reason) and maybe akihabara.

Oooh, I forgot!

I will leave Tokyo maybe once or twice to visit another friend in Yokohama. But for the most part, yeah, I'll be in Tokyo with the main friends that I'm staying with.

Yokohama? OH, YOU MEAN THAT PART OF KANAGAWA THAT IS CONURBATED TO TOKYO?

that doesn't count, but meh whatever floats your boat.

I fucking love Yokohama. I've been to Tokyo, Chiba, Fukuoka, Hamamatsu, Sendai, Nagano, Niigata, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara and my favorite city will always be Yokohama.

Check out the ramen museum there, a few minutes walk from Shin-Yokohama station, by Yokohama Arena.
