Sup /trv/? Amerifag here. I'll be applying to grad school next year, and what better opportunity to live in another country? I'm considering a few, but anyone live/been to Australia? Specifically Victoria? What's it like in the land down under?

i live in melb its the place to be

fuckin awesome

weed can be expensive though 15$ per gram, well it'll bother you if you smoke

weather is a bitch especially now its wet and cold, and in summer it can get really fuckin hot

school here is ok if your considering going to Melb Uni or Monash,

OP here. Been doing some research, and University of Melbourne seems sweet. Cost of living doesn't seem too bad in Melbourne, and if I get a GA and a healthy stipend, it just may be possible, although I'd have to pay off my car before leaving....

Australians....tell me more about where you live plz! Is it as awesome as everyone says it is? Are the Aussie women as delicious as I'm hoping?

Melbourne >> all else (says an Adelaidian... seriously, I want to GTFO)

I live in Melbourne and go to Monash Uni. Given that you're American you'll probably be amazed at the relatively low crime rate. Weather is the main issue with Melbourne (stinking hot summers and wet/cold winters). Public transport is better in Melbourne than the rest of the country. Wrt what uni you want to go to it depends what field you're in. Melb U is weak in engineering, I know that much.

this says so much about PT in Australia...

Melbourne is the place that every Australian national and ex-pat wishes they were.

Why, god, why Perth?!

I just moved to Melbourne a month or so back, and having lived in the tropics for the last 12 years its hard for me to adjust to the fucking cold. Also, attending StatLS1 at LaTrobe Uni.

Melbourne people bitch about the Public Transport system, but they don't know how good they have it.

Melbourne is a great city to visit but the people can be really insular tbh (I've had a lot of problems with homophobes, it's not as 'open' as other cities in Australia).

Also the weather sucks, it's either too hot/humid or too cold/wet, it takes a while to get used to it. Basically I wouldn't want to live there (I have relatives living there so I visit a fairly often) but I enjoy my visits there for the most part.

OP here. Weather is not a problem. I live in Ohio, and our weather is exactly the same. Summer is hot and humid, and winters are colder than fuck. How open are Australians to foreigners? Specifically Americans, since most of the world hates us?

To clear up the weather thing: Melbourne doesn't have snow. Ever. Yes, summer can be hot. Not as humid as Sydney/Brisbane. At the moment we are having cool (8C) nights and bright, clear days (15C).
You'll get on OK in Australia if you just avoid the American Vice. The relentless self-promotion. It doesn't go down well here, or anywhere else for that matter.

Australians hate Americans, quietly. One American girl I know had difficulty making friends the first two years of high school, partly for that reason.

Melbourne is more conservative, but in Australia you'll find politics is less polarised. Labor (left) is incredibly like the Liberals (right wing) now

No-one cares really.

You'll always get the odd dickhead (99% of the time he'll be a drunk 18-25 yr old) who wants to make a scene but it's nothing I'd bother to even think about imo.

How do aussies feel about lebanese?

>Specifically Americans, since most of the world hates us?

Complete and utter bullshit. 99.9% of the people you'll meet in europe and in other places, with the exception of a lot of the middle-east (which is a shithole, what the fuck would you be doing there in the first place?) won't give a damn if you're american.

Random drunk spontaneously racist asshole is a common feature in every country on the planet.

You'll have no problem, no one really cares where the hell you come from. But like others have said, there are always the racist idiots in every country. 99.9% of the time no one will even give you a second glance because you're from America.

I'm half-leb and have never had any trouble, ever. In saying that I live in Brisbane (not Sydney), I'm christian (not islamic) and I follow the Broncos (not the Bulldogs). :)

Generally Australians are pretty accepting when it comes to race or religion, though sometimes foreigners have trouble with our sense of humor and take offence where none was intended.
As others have noted, there are of course dickheads who are the exception but they are few and far between. Given that you are going to university you will most likely be keeping the company of educated people so racism shouldn't be an issue.
As for anti-americanism, a lot of people think it 'cool' to hate America but noone is too serious about it. If you are a decent bloke then Aussies will accept you for you are.

This guy. When I went to Europe for the first time I thought I would have some trouble since I was American, but nobody gave a fuck where I was from. I was oddly disappointed.

Of course there are certain situations where it's more likely to run into a problem. I went to some African style bar full of hippies and and shit. Che Guevara and white kids with dreadlocks and all that. They didn't like me but I was only there to get some weed. (They were stinky anyhow)

americans seem to be conceited enough to think that everyone hates them. that would mean that they occupy our thoughts and emotions. the truth is that we dont hate you, we nothing you.

I want to tell this to a stranger someday. Someone who does not speak English quite fluently, but knows just enough to become offended. It will be grand (until I get my teeth knocked in).

Maybe I'll say it over the phone. You have amused and inspired me.
