The Golden Gai seems like it would really enjoyable. Anyone have any stories of hanging out there?

A lot of the nomiya are really intimate. Did you feel like you were intruding?

From what I've read, it seems like a sort of art driven/intellectual crowd where being a foreigner could almost be looked at as an asset. Is this the case?

I'm sure there's some hole in the walls that are good, but this is mainly an area with lots of brothels, hostess bars, and Chinese and Japanese mafia influence. Most of the brothels and hostess bars don't allow gaijin. I'm sure some do, but doubt it'll be worth it. And never ever regardless of your drunkenness go into one where some guy outside is ushering you in. These are usually places that charge an insane amount and won't let you leave until you pay the bill.

If you want to get laid, best is to just pick up on girls at clubs/bars. Make an effort at least. Then if that fails you can call the hotel healths and be straight up with the guy that you're gaijin. He might find a girl for you. And there's a high chance you will get a pretty attractive girl who with your weaboo J-pop goggles on will be your dream girl.

That's just what I heard though lol.

Seriously, I think you'd have more fun in places like Shibuya if you like younger girls. Or if you want to go a little bit higher class, some bars in Aoyama/Daikanyama areas. Lots of hot, classy women "just above gyaru age" in those parts. Another good area is Shimo-Kitazawa, lots of college kids in that area.

Looks like I went way off on a tangent. Sorry.

For "art driven/intellectual crowd", if you have no specific place picked out you have your best shot at Aoyama/Daikanyama. And if you know of specific bars you want to try Meguro/Shirokanedai area.

How much Japanese proficiency is required?

JPN proficiency can be minimal. Really depends on the girl. Some girls just hate gaijin and they will look at you like nigras are looked at here.

But then you'd be surprised still at the amount of Japanese girls that want to get a Gaijin notch on the bed post. I would say that outside of 3rd world countries, Japan more than anywhere is easiest to get laid. Usually stupid ones but you don't care amirite? Best place to meet girls is bar/club.

If you're alone, best to talk to two girls at once. Lots of JPN girls still scared of gaijin if they're alone. Plus that also brings your chances up.

I'm an olderfag so nowadays I prefer to just chill in mellower areas than go clubbing in Shibuya/Shinjuku but it brings back memories.

Good ruck.

WARNING to weaboos: If you have no game you won't get laid, even in Japan. But you can have feeble game like me and get by. I do.

OP here.

I've also heard great things about the Meguro area, specifically Naka-Meguro. Lots of artsy shops and cafes.

I just went to Harajuku, I got looks of indifference and interest, moreso interest.
Some that seemed to just like my clothing and others that seemed interested in me through flirty behavior.

I think the ones that gave me the awkward stare had no interest in foreigners and or didn't like that I had an equally quirky style of clothing aka poser.
I might go back to buy a cool jacket, not sure.
