To Which City Should I Move? Anonymous
/trv/, hypothetical situation here: Someone who has never lived in a city before is moving to one and wants your help in picking it.

It can be any city in any country. Your reasons for picking it can be anything. The only things to consider are getting around and cost of living.
Getting around is primarily about speaking foreign languages and learning the native language. Knowing English, French and German I'll have an easier time living in Leipzig than Doha than Seoul.

So /trv/, in which city should I live?

And remember, again, this is hypothetical (For now). Consider it preplanning.

Care to say why?

>>52424
Heaps to do, things aren't so expensive compared to a lot of cities, the people are in general not crazy
It's also regularly voted among the top most livable cities
>> Anonymous
>>52427
How does it compare to other cities in Australia?
>> Anonymous
Chicago. Tons of public transportation + not as congested as NYC. Cost of living has got to be less for comparative neighborhoods then NYC as well.

Adelaide = boring

Sydney = a few tourist attractions, but otherwise, it's difficult to navigate, and a lot of it is a bit poor

Brisbane = nice place, plenty of partying, there are some good theme parks, though it's a bit hot for some people, and there isn't as much to do once you've been to the theme parks

Perth = never been there. Apparently is nice, but a bit isolated (some people like that)

Darwin = a bit poor compared to the other cities, is fairly isolated

Hobart = never been there, but it's close to Melbourne (but on its own Island). It's probably overshadowed compared to Melbourne.

Canberra = basically centered around being Australia's capital. Otherwise, there's not much to do there. Pretty easy to drive and navigate, though people there tend to drive slowly.

Actually, Sydney seems to have a relatively high contrast between rich and poor.

true but there is really no need to go to the poorer areas, further west the shittier it gets

Major Eastern Cities ONLY.

Australians will banter back and forth, but Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane are all fine choices.

Remember: Western Australia might as well be Eastern Africa.

Are there any good cities that are NOT in Australia?

Montreal!! DO IT, trust me you will never regret it
Affordable housing, plenty of jobs, friendly people, one of the best nightlife you will find in North America, drinking age 18 (rarely enforced), excellent transportation system, largest underground city in the whole world, plenty of things to do.

It's such a beautiful city, Summer is all about non-stop festivals and events starting at June and ending in September, if you like the winter, snow and all that crap, there are also a lot of things to do. And if you don't, then you can always take shelter in the underground city lol

It's one of the few, if not the only working bilingual city in North America, and you already speak both languages so that gives you a heads up.

Think about it. you won't regret it

Oslo is an awesome city, the only thing is that unless you were Norwegian to begin with, paying to live there will be absolute hell to do. Zurich is great too, but pretty much the same story.

Because all the hip people like Angelina Jolie, Brat Pitt and Marilyn Manson buy houses there. Berlin is the shit at the moment.
Only if you are a homosexual unemployed arrogant turk of course.
Don't listen to him. Go to Hamburg or Munich, but NEVER EVER go to the East. NEVER YOU HEAR!

I've heard lots of good things about Norway. If I were deciding this move on country, rather than city, Norway would be my pick.
But yeah, I've never heard someone mention Norway on /trv/ without mentioning the cost of living.

>Knowing English, French and German

Then why don't you live in the city with the best quality of life in the world, Zurich?

Not OP here, but still intrigued. I've looked through the wikitravel articles, but that's from a visitor's perspective. What's the Second City like as a place to live and work?

I would move to Praha (Prauge) I was flyiogn through and from what I saw and did it was a beautiful city most people had a base knowlage of english, the entire city looks gothic I loved it
>> Anonymous
>>52947

seriously, montreal is awesome

its also one of the most poly-ethnic cities in the world
>> Anonymous
So Prague and Montréal sound like the top picks.

I spoke to a friend who lives in Montréal and heard a lot of good things about it.
As for Prague, a big concern is the language. How difficult would a Slavic language be to learn? Obviously much more difficult than a Germanic or Romantic language would be for me, but how much more?
>> Anonymous
>>53643

My vote goes for Montreal, I don't know how much money you have, but if you don't save up enough, how will you get a job to support yourself? You can't speak that slavic language and it will take you a while to pick it up.

Go for Montreal seriously, it has EVERYTHING, 2nd most European city in North America after Quebec city.

Im gonna have to say Vancouver as well. Lots of outdoor things to do, lots of beautiful women, warm climate (Compared to the rest of Canada) and also consistently ranked 2 or 3 of the most livable cities in the world.

The only real negative is the cost of living is fairly high.
