This is probably a little late to post but...
The people are, most times, pretty nice and will help you if needed. The country is peaceful, but avoid wandering around at night in places were there aren't many people if you're in a big city like Lisbon or Porto. Just use your common sense.
Food wise, it's usually pretty good. And some of the times cheaper means better, especially up north.
About the culture... well, if you like history there are lots of castles and palaces to visit. I'd recommend Guimarães, for instance, although Guarda can be quite nice as well.
Nature wise, the north is much prettier than the south, so Guarda is again a good bet.
All in all, a good, inexpensive, place to visit.
