Hi /trv/,

I read too much books and watch too many movies about traveling across the USA.

I'm from Europe. I want to travel from New York to San Francisco and back again, next summer. What's the best way to do this nowadays? Hitchhiking would be fun, but too dangerous I think. I think about hopping from town to town in buses and trains. Good idea?

Did anybody archive this? Is it worth it?

Is California THAT great? :D

if you want a long journey i say trains. hitch-hiking is a bitch. i did it from texas to california and it was horrible.

trains are the way to go, the few lines that we do have gorgeous scenery and the trains themselves are not that bad

Train probably is your best bet if you actually want to see the country. Driving would allow you the most freedom, but you would have to obtain a car, and actually do the driving (about 6000 miles worth).

Unfortunately, in the United States, due to the high fuel prices and the fact that railroad transit is not very popular, train tickets are pretty damn pricey, so do your homework.

California IS pretty awesome as long as you're not completely broke.

For what you want to do, Amtrak and VIA (the Canadian passenger railroad company) offer a 30-day North American Rail Pass. It's somewhere between $3-5k USD, but might be worth it.

Greyhound buses can be INCREDIBLY dangerous and are really not much safer than hitchhiking. I traveled by Greyhound bus a bit when I was younger.

Safetywise I would say

Rental car>Flying>Amtrack>Greyhound>hitchhiking>freight hopping

Something you don't know about the USA: when a convict is released from prison, he always gets a free bus ticket to wherever he's going. Our incarcerated population exceeds 2 million people. As a result you'll be sharing your bus with 10-15 recently released ex-cons with no money in their pockets, and you're an international traveler with no family or connections in the state (let alone the USA) with nobody who will miss you for at least 2-3 weeks.

Please don't do this. Rent a car even though it's as expensive as fuck. Don't do stuff like this unless you have money. Backpacking is for Europe. It doesn't work in America. Get a gun and arm yourself or travel in a group or something. It's more dangerous here than you can possibly imagine.
