Has anyone here been an exchange student? I'm a 20 year old American in college. I have been planning for a semester away and wanted to hear other people's experiences. Where did you go, what group/company did you arrange it with, your opinion on the trip, etc.

I was an exchange student to Japan. I did it through my university. Lived in Osaka. I thought it was fantastic. Best year of my life. I was 22 when I did it, and made friends that I still have to this very day. You should do it, fgt.

Oh yeah, did you stay in a dorm or with a host family?

Kansai Gaidai, in Hirakata City. It's a fairly well known foreign language school. It has mainly Japanese students, but some foreigners come too.

I stayed in Gaidai's dorm, which is called Seminar House. It's very comfortable there. Host families are iffy. You may get an AWESOMESAUCE one, or you may get a completely insane one. I heard of both happening while I was there, but being in a dorm gave me the freedom to go wherever I wanted to whenever. You could even stay out late, so long as you asked for a key beforehand and were quiet coming back in.

The coolest thing about Japanese exchange apart from the fact that you are in Japan is that you will get to interact with people from all over the world. It's not just Americans. I have friends now from Sweden, the UK, Korea, Australia, Mexico. It's probably the most positive experience of my life, going to a foreign language university.

Picture related, taken by me.
