Heading out of CLT tomorrow. I rented a convertible and I'm going west. I don't have to be back until late Monday.

Where should I go and what should I see?

Go to Chattanooga. Memphis is a shithole and Nashville isn't that great.

Do not take the interstate into Tennessee. Cross the mountains on either US441 or US129.

441 will take you through Cherokee NC, over the mountains through the Natl Park, Gatlinburg, and Pigeon Forge (the greatest collection of kitsch and tackiness on earth). This is an exceedingly scenic drive, especially with everything in bloom!

Now, if you are a driving enthusiast, you might consider crossing south of the park on US129, the Tail of the Dragon (http://www.tailofthedragon.com/). Sadly, we've had bad weather so the road won't be safe for spirited driving - and it crawls with cops on the weekend. So 441 is probably a better choice.

Lived in Memphis for some 18 years, now live in Johnson City, TN (near Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge that Anon has mentioned.. and yes, they're incredibly tack tourist attractions. Stuck in 1995. Seriously. The entire culture there.)

On second thought, after reading my own link, do NOT take US129. It appears to have turned into a cop-infested nightmare.

OP here.

Thanks guys. I'm updating my GPS as I type. I really just plan to start driving with no exact plan. But I do like having a rough idea of the general circuit I'm going to take.

I grew up in Johnson City. East TN is a beautiful area. I never appreciated it until I moved to Ohio.

Lulz. You speak the truth about Gatlinburg. It's like the only place people from northeast Alabama (that's where I'm from, unfortunately) go to for vacation, aside from Panama City. Lots of people from my neck of the woods up there, which is probably what helps it stay that 15-20 years behind. Though apparently, there's now a significantly larger group of people who go there from the midwest now...no doubt the redneckish areas of those states.
