So /trv/...

Very few things are interesting enough to stick with me in my current state of life. What I have been thinking about for some time now is traveling, going wherever. I have a knack for languages, and learning them is something I do enjoy, so that wouldn't be too much of a problem. My plan so far is to simply pick up some crap job (or a good one, if I can) in some foreign country, experience the place, and move on. Anywhere would be great, seeing as I've never left the States in my life.

Example: Work at a pub in Ireland for a year. Get the fuck out and pick up a job in Cairo for a year as an English teacher or summat.

I may settle down eventually, but not right fucking now.
I figure nows the time as I'm seventeen without any shit to tie me down.

WHADDAYA SAY?

Sure, you can get on the ladder if you like, but it's probably better to find one solid property and stick with it rather than get competitive.
Buying/selling on the property market is quite risky, and you could soon find yourself stuck in Istanbul making phone calls home asking why you've got no more credit in your account.

Property is a means to perpetual travel, not a new career prospect. Don't get ambitious. It'd be far more useful to simply rent out to, say, a family.
Certain diplomatic services or corporate businesses also like to make homes available to their representatives, and if you strike a deal with them your property could become used by these people consistently, meaning you'll have essentially made a money printing machine off of a big corporate/diplomatic entity. You'll be getting a comfortable amount of cash every week to fund your adventures.

If you honestly want to travel for the rest of your life, kid, schemes like this are your best bet.

The world is a thing that will - if you aren't totally, completely prepared, both mentally and physically - chew you up and spit you out in the dirt to die. Trying to experience it with grand ideas swimming around in your head, completely surpressing any notion of common sense and pragmatic thought WILL get you in trouble with the law, scammed, hurt or killed.

At your age, I'd strongly suggest that you get some experience; a few weekend trips to big cities under your belt, or maybe a daytrip across the border to Canada or Mexico. Have relatives (or close friend) living somewhere that's not podunk bumfuck USA? Go live with them for a weekend, and have them show you around. Or sign up for some sort of cultural exchange program - these are often good for introducing you to a foregin culture while keeping you relatively safe and secure. Spanish/French/German/etc. classes in school usually offer trips to countires that speak the language being taught, often at a subsidized price.

Get your papers in order. passport, driver's license, social security, insurance cards, and whatever forms of ID you yanks have.

And never try and work in a foregin country without the right visas. In most countries this is illegal, and if you're caught you can get into deep shit.

This is also good advice, but the sentiment I generally don't like. In all my travels through Europe, the US and New Zealand I found people wonderfully welcoming.

Maybe I'm just a lucky guy, but on all these trips helpful and friendly people were simply thrown at me, and I now have lots of great friends and memories from all these countries. Of course, you've got to be smart and scope out the situation.
Don't fall for scams etc. but don't be paranoid either. Most people don't want to knife you in the back. Anyway, if you're constantly afraid your actions are actually more predictable for criminals.

We do come to 4chan for pretty much the most angry criticism we can get, though. We don't come here for hugs or patting on the head really. Take it with a grain of salt and you can get some worthwhile advice here.

You're probably right - most people in the world won't knife you in the ribs and take your cash given the chance.

I guess i've just let myself get burned one too many times

I thought about that when i was 18, saved up a bunch of money and decided to go couch surfing through Europe, and spend some time in China, and then spend as long as I can working for my cousins at their restaurant in Australia.>>44004Is absolutely in first sentance. Don´t go anywhere where you already don´t have friends, and always have enough for a plane ticket back home in your bank account.

Try Europe first, I know lots of Americans have bad expierences being American in Europe, but after nearly 5 months of couch surfing there ( I´m couchsurfing there this summer as well.) I´ve never offended anyone i´ve spent more than a couple hours with by just being American. As long as your polite, quiet and flexible everything will be alright.

Also, as long as you don´t do anything totally stupid, you´ll be fine everywhere you go.(unless that place happens to be in a war.)
