Expect dirty glances from the local populace especially if you are white.

Japan has got to be one of the most xenophobic places I have ever visited.

I'm getting pretty sick of Japan threads already. I can see they're gonna be a recurring annoyance if this board lives.

I lived there for 3 months. I've never been treated so well by complete strangers anywhere else.

But anyway, all the info you need is at japan-guide.com

Japan is about as xenophobic as any other country, if you come back seeing the country as racist, it's because you went there with a Japan is a paradise mentality.

If you're nervous, are polite and give a crap about the people there, know it can be difficult but want to tough it out anyway, you'll love it, because it'll pleasantly surprise you.

Basically, go to Japan thinking it's a paradise, you'll hate it. Go to Japan thinking it'll be tough as hell, it'll feel like paradise.

As for daily life, if you truly look forward to experiencing Japan, trek your own path.

I personally couldn't stand the big cities like Tokyo and enjoyed more rural/suburban places like Nara and Hanamaki better. But then again I'm a guy from Arkansas.

Meh, there's nothing wrong with having a japanese thread linger around /trv/ as long as it remains as a single thread and people CHILL with the concept of travelling to japan.

Friend and I are planning a trip there around late summer. It's going to be a rather long trip (1-2 months) and we're going to travel the country as much as possible and see the sights. My friend studied the language for some 3 years but my knowledge is pretty much limited to the phrases I've learned from him. I speak fluent English though. I'll probably buy some phrasebooks so I can chill out with any cool people I find.

Anyway, I want to hook up with some people living there who know a bit about clubbing, sightseeing and generally tips for moving around. Contrary to reading about Japan from e-sites, I want to meet people who've been/are there and done the stuff.
