cost:

-Sleeping. Hostels are the cheapest and best for a backpacker on the move, usually $10-$40 per night.
-Food. You must eat. $15 per day if you only eat bread, cheese, and sausage and only drink tap water. $25 to $30 per day for fast food and short-order joints. $50 and up for restaurants. A good budget is about $25 per day for food.
-Entertainment. Usually means drinking, in bars or otherwise. Also includes museums, tours, concerts, movies, etc. At least $15 per day.
-Local transportation. If you're staying in a big city, a weekly travel pass for public transportation is a must. Usually $20 to $40 per week. If you're hiking or hitchhiking, you'll be hungry more often, so expect to spend more on food.
-Regional transportation (between destinations). Buses are always the cheapest, trains or planes are cheaper or more expensive than each other depending on what part of the world you're going to. If you'll be travelling all over in Japan or Europe, railpasses are available. If you're only going to a couple places, it's probably cheaper to just buy individual tickets.
-Major transportation. Getting to and from home. The cheapest you'll find for round-trip transcontinental flights will be about $400. For transatlantic flights, about $700. Transpacific flights are more like $1000. Always shop around, and try to do it as far in advance as possible.

Ans always have extra money in your bank account for emergencies. Borrow it from someone if you have to, you don't want to be stuck somewhere when your visa runs out and you can't buy a ticket home.
