Just drink a Red Bull or something before you get off. You really can't avoid jet lag too much, as your body will need time to adjust to the time difference. Unless your boyfriend is a douche, I'm sure he'll understand that you had a very long flight.
Also, jet lag is easier to get over if you're traveling in a certain direction, but I forget if it's east or west. I assume it's west because going in that direction means your day will get longer, and I'd guess that staying up longer is a bit easier than trying to go to sleep earlier.
