how does /trv/ feel about groningen? i'm (hopefully) doing a semester abroad there in the spring, but being from the states i speak only english :/ how do the dutch feel about americans, and what can i do to dispel any bad feelings? claiming to be canadian (my strategy last time i went abroad) won't work, as my exchange program comes through the university of south carolina -_-; am i doomed to be shunned, or is it possible to redeem myself by acting like a mature adult and falling into as few stereotypes as possible?

*facepalm*

You know the stereotype is about ignorant Americans who know nothing of the world, right? You being an exchange student temporarily studying at the same university they are at, means that will be dispelled.

I don't really know anything about Groningen. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere.

you'll probably find that not many people actually think it, its more just elitist jerks in the US that try and say that so many Americans are ignorant, so that they can be the exception

Groningenfag here.

Groningen is great, quite a few americans students here. Hard to find em though, they blend in.

I actually met a guy from North Carolina here in a metalbar, was a blond surfer looking dude lol.

Proper grammar can't hurt.

The Dutch have absolutely no prejudices about Americans. Especially not in the north. Very open minded people there. I live in the middle of the country, but went there once, it's a nice city for students really.
Enjoy ;)

I live in Groningen.

Your concerns are completely ungrounded. Of course, like anywhere else, there are plenty of assholes around, but the overall atmosphere is very far from hostile towards anything at all, really.

Just on the safe side you might not want to tell people if you're voting for McCain, though. :d

I am dutch and i have studied in Groningen. It is not a problem for dutch people that americans speak english only. Most dutch people know english well and are fine with speaking it. Overall, the dutch are curious and open-minded. There are also many foreign students in Groningen.

Ow, dont come if you're a nigger, we have enough of those.

Why? The dutch are incredibly racist.

Be sure you're able to speak moroccan, OP.

HAHAHAHahaha... *kills himself*

It should be a good experience. There are some dutch weirdos but the most are OK. The dutch already know everything about America because they watch it on tv, its a love hate thing. Wear brown or black shoes, white tennis shoes are shall we say, out.

why would you say youre canadian?
youre such a fuck. nobody gives a shit about americans in europe. as a matter of fact they all basically worship american shit. saying youre canadian is just like "oh.. okay interesting." i have not had ANY PROBLEM being american in Europe, except around people who are just plain douche bags.

weird, i'm from NC myself :P i've heard that there are lots of international students; it's part of why i chose to go :)

dude, no worries- definitely got in an absentee ballot for Obama. not that he's perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but far better than McCain... plus, he inspires people in a nation where skepticism is the norm.

i am just saying, i got a better response from people in germany by claiming to be canadian. people were noticeably friendlier to my traveling companion and i when we said we were canadian than when we said we were from the states... but that was also during some serious G8 protest rallies there.

Who cares what germans think about you? Their opinion stopped mattering after they decided to hand over their country to turks.
