Racism in Japan Anonymous
How bad is it? Im not gaijin but im mixed with jp. Are they down with it or will i get treated differently? Any stories about racism in japan from travelers?
>> Anonymous
As long as you're not fat of obnoxious you will be fine. And by fat I mean overweight, don't play the amerifag game of saying you're "stocky" or "big-boned" because everyone will stare at you for being fat all the same. Follow the cues you get from people around you. Even if you do act like a nigger-faggot-honkey they probably won't say anything to your face other than give you a weird look. Then once you're out of range they'll make fun of you with their friends.
>> Anonymous
if you look like a japanese, they will treat you normally until it becomes obvious that you don't speak japanese, at which point you will get some racism directed towards you. If you look caucasian you will be fine, unless you are fat, as said by the above poster

>>9963

also, anyone not 100% pure blooded japanese born and raised in japan is gaijin, sorry.

I see so thats how it is. Just gotta deal with it then.

This person is full of shit. Being tall/fat isgoing to effect how people act towards you.

>>9987
You'll get an 'oh shit, how embarassing' reaction in this case, but again, no racist actions.

Assuming you were raised with manners, remember them. Be considerate to people around you and act like a grown up in public. Don't be loud and confrontational in public and see just how much 'racism' there is over here.

so is being white a good oddity or a bad oddity? are the nip sluts going to line up to slobber all over my cock?

The Japanese practice a strong but genteel "racism". They wont give you verbal abuse or have an argument with you; if they don't want your company they will probably just ignore you. They are polite but will also make fun of your gaijin ways behind your back.

Also "xenophobic" is a more accurate term for them than "racist".

There may be a few bars you'll go to where you may be refused entry, or they'll talk very loudly and in very racist ways about you, while you're sitting there (not that you'd know if you don't speak Japanese).

I'm a fatty and I live in Japan. I wouldn't say people treat me poorly because of it. They stare a lot, but fuck, I'd stare a lot too. It's not that there aren't fatty Jappos -- there are, and there's more every year -- but the mix of fatty + roundeye = "wow that's weird, i've never seen that, let's stare some more, how is that possible, I don't understand".

Some ryokan and onsen will refuse you entry as well, because you are foreign, and do not understand the rules, and they don't want to bother trying.

That's a weeaboo malady. Most Japanese people criticize the country endlessly. I've gotten sick of hearing my girlfriend yack on about how Australia is superior in every way. She spent THREE WEEKS there.

Also, a suggestion for American /trv/ellers. Please reduce the noise level of EVERYTHING you say by at least 50%. It will make life more bearable for everyone. kthxby.

Japanese people are hella nice and unless you come from the royal household of the principality of Luxembourg you will get taken back over how polite and helpful people are. I left both my bag and return flight ticket behind customs at narita and the airport staff found it for me in like 10 minute flat, if that happened back at my home country someone would have stolen that shit before it hit the ground.

Another time I was stuck in tokyo because bad weather cancelled trains, but earlier at the platform I helped this white collar guy with his english and he seriously would not leave me alone until he knew that I found a way back home. He followed me around making sure I got the right train, talked to station staff for me and got my money back on the original ticket that I bought and gave me a very polite bow as the doors closed and saw me off. Seriously a total stranger.

As for if you're fat/a horrible pedophile/whatever, people might think all kinds of things about foreigners in their head, but the way things work go like this. Keep things to yourself, and they will also ignore but tolerate (same thing towards their own kind too, which speaks volumes about social problems in japan). Don't be loud, be polite, and even if you're embarassed by your shameful lack of japanese try to use what you know, people really appreciate effort on your part and they're not like us westerners who laugh endlessly whenever a japanese person fucks up with their english.

If you go into sleezy areas full of drunks like kabukicho then sure be prepared to be harassed and what not but seriously, common sense.

Also on the stories of racism it goes like this, racism is in institutionalized policies, not in the minds of your average japanese dude.

Racism is in their immigration policies and what not, and the people are generally ignorant of the plight of expats. They see foreigners coming over as visitors, because Japan is a country that has never had to deal with multiculturalism unlike western countries and the thought that foreigners want to live in their country doesn't come naturally like elsewhere.

Of course you have the Uyoku guys who run around in their giant boombox trucks and blabber on about all kinds of crap, but seriously that is like saying that the KKK and rednecks define the general american populace. Also even when those guys think about how they hate foreigners, the things that are most on their mind are koreans, the american imposed constitution and how japanese girls are getting married to them a lot. If you're some nerd coming over to oggle some anime boobies you're not going to be pissing in their flower garden.

I was in a store and these two business men, thinking I don't understand Japanese, commented on how I was "scary" (probably because I'm 6'4") but that's about it.
>> Anonymous
You'll be fine as long as you're polite. I'm a quarter Japanese and I've been twice to Japan in the past couple of years. The only time I ever had anything happen was when I was in a shop in Kyoto and some guy around my age (20) called me gaijin. I just rolled my eyes at him and walked off.

But you really do need to be polite. Say please and thank you as much as possible and smile a lot. Don't be loud and obnoxious. Oh, and don't dress like a slob.

Learning to speak at least a bit of the language helps as well, but that goes for any country.

Especially American tourists seem to ignore the fact that a lot of countries have a language different from English.
>> Anonymous
In general, like all of the previous anons have said, just be mindful of manners. There are endless unspoken rules and ways of acting so you are courteous to others. Regardless of race, if you have bad manners, you will be given dirty looks and despised.

From some stories from a friend of mine who lives there, native Japanese people are quite racist towards Chinese. If you are American, think of it similar to how American racism towards Mexicans. There is somewhat of a trend of Chinese people trying to "make it big" in Japan to earn money for their families back home, but then they end up failing and becoming homeless, theives etc. This only reinforces the ill feelings.

In general though, the racism is subtle, and if you are ignorant of it, you probably wont even notice besides the occasional dirty looks.

English is spotty but you can somehow still get around in central Tokyo and survive not knowing any Japanese at all because all the really important stuff like train station signs and what not are bilingual and it's not like you really need to know the language to shop, just point and gesture.

Debito is a neurotic argumentative weirdo. His site would be good for hard facts on things like immigration procedure and what not but I'd be weary of his anecdotes. If he acted the way he does back in his former country people would find ways to deny service too.
>> Anonymous
>>11884
He's an oversensitive faggot for sure, but his site contains a lot of useful information and hard facts that also covers government policies that would be considered racist in western standards. Also facts that you normally would not look into or would have otherwise found including United Nations reports on how they have been pressuring Japan to cease discrimination of foreigners, and public bath houses and restaurants not to go to due to No Foreigner policies. (Bars and brothels too, but those are a given right?)

There is (or was) also a list of books/magazines that would also probably be considered racist in western standards that was on his site. He called on the publisher on it and they subsequently stopped printing it after about a week.

He still does some good.

I wouldn't be so harsh really.
Yes, there are lots of americans that are like "Woo! We fucking rule. USA is the land of free and fuck everyone else." but they usally do not deny you things becuse you are a eurofag.
But americans and japanese should really get a better look at the world in whole.
USA is not the country where you are free to do anything (lawl, tazer to you biatch) and Japan should step down and understand that a shit lot of their culture are a western cultur with a twist. Sure there are lots of fine Japanese culture left but after USA kinda buttfucked their culture in there, not so much.

Also: Common sense tingling. Use it!

Debito is a great insight for expats, considering how unique his perspective is being a naturalized white japanese citizen. Ignore his opinions, though it's rather expected from long term expats to be this bitter considering how impossible it is to comfortably assimilate yourself into japanese society.

Also all the shit stirring on fingerprinting at airports is totally overhyped unless it's the ethics of the matter that concern you. It's only brought the processing time at airports on par with the rest of the world, considering how quick and lax their customs are. I am used to spending forever in customs at a airport because where I am from they are paranoid as shit and search everyone with a fine tooth comb.
