Everything you ever wanted to know about Tokyo, you smelly weeaboo, you.

ramen stands and places that sell food like yakitori and stuff are cheap. The convinience stores are really good, they sell all sorts of food at am/pm prices.

Also, the rails are the best method of transportation so get a Suica card. It's better than using the machines to buy a pass every time. All you have to do is swipe it on the gate things.

If nowhere to sleep, either pay for homestay (if you can find it) or rent out love hotels by the night. They're like 50/70 bucks but be prepared to find used condoms in drawers if it's a supercheap place.

If you go to disneyland, don't go inside. Hang out around the outside and they have their own downtown disney. It's not cheap there but it's fun to look around. They have a movie theater too. If you really wanna go to d-land, go to disney sea, it's much better than the other park.

Go to odaiba bay as well. More stuff to see. and there's like cool arcades with claw machines and stuff. Go to yoyogi koen at harajuku and you can look at all the weird goth lolita girls and more weird people and that's free. They have a lot of streetside food vendors too.

Shibuya has some cheap stuff because it's designed mainly for teenagers, and the girls there all look like anime characters (cosmetic surgery) the night clubs in shinjuku are not that pricey.

akihabara is really fun to look around. You get to see Japanese Nerds. They're the OG weeaboos. Maid cafes are not that expensive and fun to go to once or twice. They also sell cheap electronics.

Korea town is also pretty cheap, it's right past love hotel lane (this huge street with lots of love hotels) You can get some good korean food, but nobody there will speak either English or Japanese, so you're better of being a k-fag.

Don't go to Kyoto unless you want to spend money. The society there is stuck up and closed off to foreigners unless you have the money to spend.

Stay away from onsens cause they tend to be expensive.

For shopping, go to Shibuya 109 (if you're a girl) there's a bunch of cheap cute stuff there. They opened up an H&M in Ginza, which is about the only cheap thing you're going to find there.

If you have the money though, Ginza can be a really fun place to go, there's a lot of classy whores, but you can only really have access to them if you're japanese (cause they're worried about STDs)

Best place to meet girls is a nightclub, because many of them are on the prowl for foreign guys. If you want to talk to high school girls, they're total sluts in harajuku and shibuya~

Generally, girls who have their hair dyed are out of school, and girls which black hair are either from Kyoto (or the country) or still in school.
>> Anonymous
Omotesando is also a really good place to go shopping, but things can be pricey there too. They opened up a new shopping center there like 2 years ago, which looks like a trapezoid, but it's really hot and smelly inside.

If you're a guy, wear really snappy clothes, have well trimmed facial hair, wear nice shoes, and be clean. If you're a girl, all of the above, except hopefully you wont have to think about trimming your facial hair.

Actually if you're a guy, be white, stylish, tall, slender, rich, and charming.

The onsens in Nikko are really fun and there are both communal baths (men only or women only) and family baths (you can take your partner/child with you) but they are pretty expensive. Stay for the night, and you will usually get dinner and breakfast. You need to drive or take the bus there though.

Okay, anything else?

Just to give you an idea, here's a place in Akiba with an animu/mango/KAWAII/cosplay theme. 16000 yen for one hour with any of these girls. This includes 69, fellatio, intercrural sex (look it up). Anal and having her swallow your cum costs extra. You agree upon a love hotel in the akihabara region to meet up and do the deed.

No, I just looked this up for shits and giggles. I hear for the most part they generally don't allow foreigners anyway with the exception of certain crappier places which cater to foreigners specifically. Just walking around Shinjuku and Shibuya and once in Kanda even I was stopped by some stranger advertising some sort of sexual service which I politely declined. Since they stopped me, a very obvious fresh-off-the-plane foreigner with poor Japanese language skills, then it's reasonable to assume foreigners are welcome in THOSE particular establishments.

Don't have much personal experience in Tokyo, myself, but I've found the youth hostels (by reservation), capsule hotels (small, cheap, and maybe Nips only) are better alternatives than love hotels. Hell, I've personally stayed 12 hours in an internet cafe in Yokohama for about 30 bucks.

Open lesbian lifestyle as it's understood in the west is rare in Japan. There used to be a few real lesbian magazines (as in magazines for lesbians, not lesbian porn, though they had a bit of that too...) but I think they're all dead now, so now its mostly just on the internet. The lifestyle does exist though, and there are documentaries, publications, etc. if you want to go and find them.

Then there are borderline phenomena such as the slightly differently understood "friendship between girls" and a number of subcultures, such as takarazuka fandom, where the members usually claim to be straight but, well...

They have tickets at the gates even when the show is sold out online. Just go there in the morning before they open and wait in the line. Should be fine unless it's the first performance for a new show or something.

>>73092
In addition to>>73108explanation, the shows have two parts, and the second one is a totally over-the-top campy revue. At least to my western eyes (locals might see it differently).

The Takarazuka revue has an intense fandom, almost exclusively (straight) women. The actors who specialize in male roles, otokoyaku, are treated like rock stars.

In addition to the theatre, they have several shops selling fan items and a salon where you can dress up and be photographed in one (or more...) extravagant costumes they've used in their plays.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around someone actually having either a JLPT 1 or 2 and not also have some kind of college degree. If you're looking for a well-off job, I honestly don't know any set-ups that will completely wave away such a lack right out of hand. Perhaps you could convince them otherwise during an interview, but I have no idea how you'd ever get that far.

*Case in point: the JET Programme's main requirements to make it to the interview process are 1.) have a natural/fluent comprehension of a target language, and 2.) have ANY collegiate degree. ANY as in "any-goddamn-thing whatsoever"

Just my thoughts on the matter.
>> Anonymous
>>73499

Heh. I actually went to college for a couple years, but never finished and never made much progress towards a major due to financial and personal reasons. I did however continue to study Japanese after I left on my own.
I'm confident I could pass level 1, as I pass the practice tests every time but still working on level 2, I'm close.

I'm not looking for a fancy job though, I don't make much here in the states, I live petty frugal, so if it's comparable, I'd be happy.

Do you have any actual marketable skills? What kind of work did you have in mind?

There are largish groups of foreigners doing manual labour and all kinds of dirty and/or dangerous low-pay work the Japanese generally don't want to do. Though the reasons the Iranian and the Brazilian minorities were able to form don't really apply to you, there certainly are plenty of foreigners without degrees working in Japan. So the work is there, but no idea if you can get a visa or not. Can't hurt to try, no?
>> Anonymous
>>73536

Um, I'm a certified HVAC technician, EPA license and all but don't think that counts for much over there. I don't do HVAC currently either.
I've worked in retail sales, (cell phone sales, first job, but got alot of sales experience) but currently I am a handset (cellphone) repair technician for Verizon Wireless. It doesn't pay much, $13.10(USD) an hour after nearly 2 years of working there but the benefits package is amazing.
Right now, I live with a roomate and we lease a decent apartment. I am not against living with a roomate to help cut expenses.

So what do you think? I'm pretty motivated...
>> Anonymous
>>73543
You can certainly try. Sales might be hard to get into if you're a scary foreigner, esp. if you don't really know how to talk to customers in Japanese. Don't expect much in terms of job security in any case. Temp jobs only, fired without notice, that kind of thing can easily happen. Or you might get lucky, who knows. Have enough savings so you won't be completely fucked no matter what happens.

Most of my knowledge about this subject is historical (the minorities I mentioned previously) and no longer applicable. First hand, I know some fellow exchange students got temp jobs while they were in there. Didn't seem particularly hard.

Real, but still crappy, hotel, two meals at cheap restaurants (yoshinoya and the like) and buying shit from convenience stores for breakfast/snacks. Around 6000 yen per day, maybe a bit less. Can be a lot more if you don't manage to find a cheap hotel or if you want some variety in your diet. Also, you'll need to spend money on getting around, entrance fees, etc. Say, 8000 yen a day total and you won't be bored to tears while you're there.

You can snip a few thousand yen off if you live in a dorm or something.

Note that this does not account for any big purchases, clubbing, etc.

As far as I know there is one job in japan that is always looking for foreigners to do. Teach English. If you know English enough that you could teach somebody broken English I would suggest you look for programs sending teachers to schools in the Tokyo area ( if you specifically want to be in Tokyo).

Both of my cousins went to Japan (one for 2 years another for 6) to teach English and i know for a fact they do not have any teaching experience prior to this however they both have degrees in something completely unrelated to teaching.

This being said your probably thinking, yes i could do that but its not that easy. Sure you can go there and have a job but you still have to do it remember and dont expect to be teaching a whole class either if your not with a program even then if you don't speak close to semi-fluent Japanese expect to mark assignments and whatnot for grammer and proper usage for a while. Living while cheap is a weird double edged sword, they nickel and dime you to death with small little things you have to pay for (such as train and bus fees to name a few). That being said its really convenient i mean there is lots of places to eat and its easy to get to and from your job most of the time and all your food can be bought fresh usually on your way home from work in a 5 minute detour around your area. Its an idea but i wouldn't suggest it to everybody usually you'll be living in almost semi poverty for a while at least in the beginning.

Not 100% sure what kind of programs are offered for this kind of stuff in your area (as we probably dont live in the same area) i would suggest something called GEOS but fuck me from what i have heard from one of my cousin who went to Japan with them it fucking sucked worse than anything he has ever done it was an experience he said but a gong show at the same time

>> Anonymous
>>73961

Also just because i forgot. Just because GEOS puts on a nice face doesn't mean shit also their website doesn't tell you anything about what is required OF YOU the damn teacher before you even go. As far as i can tell they would take a hobo off the street and send him there because he can speak English stupid i know but their website is fail. I would suggest if you do plan to teach there don't go as some fresh dumb ass gaijin learn some japanese even if its something as minimal as learning how to order food (mans gotta eat right) and just general social and cultural things linguistically you would need to know (like the proper way to say thank you or hello, how to introduce yourself as well as customs and when to use words in the proper way when pertaining to somebodies social status.)
>> Anonymous
>>73964

I would like to know the answer to this question too...
>> Anonymous
>>73964

You could go there and look for a job but honestly i wouldn't even know where to fucking look as japan still is fairly xenophobic in some areas it all depends on what kind of job you want and how foreign your ass is. You can be there for a year or two and id still call you foreign. IF you plan on just taking a trip there to look to see whats a possibility i don't see a visa being an issue at all i mean i went when i was 18 and i got a visa no problem. I have heard though that if your are foreign and on a VISA (as you can never be a japanese citizen) if you are not employed for a certain amount of time (a fairly long while not like a week lol) the Japanese government section pertaining to tourism and stuff can and will deport your sorry ass.
>> Anonymous
>>73966
I speak Japanese though. That isn't the issue. I'm just wondering if they wont let me work there unless I come all the way back here for a work visa. Can I go to the embassy or consulate or whateverthefuck over there?

Appreciate your advice anon, it joys my britches : )
>> Anonymous
>>73970
I know for a fact that Japan's job market is a hell of a lot better than what we have in the states. It's about 15 percent of the reason I want to move over there.

I've also discovered that Japanese people measure their interest in something in percent.

So I'd say I'm 100 percent an AsianFag who can pass as Japanese and speaks Japanese. I'm also 85 percent not a weeaboo. I simply have boyfriend who is 100 percent Japanese and speaks only 50 percent English, which is why I had to learn 50 percent Japanese to balance us out. Although I did go up to about 65 percent for the fun of it, which admittedly makes me 15 percent weeaboo.

Master percentages and you will master Japan.
>> Anonymous
>>73971

>I speak Japanese though.

Speaking and speaking well are two different things i can speak Japanese as well but i wouldn't be anywhere near holding an extended conversation before asking if they spoke English, but again i don't know your ability i just want you to be aware things aren't all in English either but most of the signage on most important things are dual language.

Well I live in Canada so the system could be different i would talk to your local government agency pertaining to tourism and out of country work and ask them about this i don't know enough about the legality of the actual act of getting a visa as i only needed mine for a short trip but as far as i know you don't need a visa for anything under a 3 month trip in japan.
>> Anonymous

>> Anonymous
>>73975

HAHA. Trust me it would be way less trouble to get a Visa than it would be to get a date lol. It takes days-months to get a visa getting a wife/husband well who knows how long that could take. Also again you will have to get the visa anyway because as far as i know you dont get citizenship by marriage (one of my cousins married in japan in his 6 years there and he still didn't have citizenship or so he said ill trust he knows what hes talking about, if however he had a child they would have citizenship even if they where born in his country of origin).

There are ryokans in all price classes, the cheapest ones are probably pretty shitty and I definitely wouldn't recommend trying them in the winter: paper walls+no real heating=fucking cold.

When we went there, I compared prices on asiarooms.com and found hotel Hanamiya to be the cheapest that suited us. I know it's not the cheapest in town, but it was cheap enough and the location was good.

So compare prices, and be sure to take into account WHEN you're going and WHAT KIND of rooms you're going to stay in. Some places that have a good price on single rooms are ridiculously expensive for doubles.

alright so, i dont think you've had this question before. not exactly
i graduated high school at 15 yrs old, and moved out within a month of graduating, to live with my gf 4 states away. So i'm pretty damned self sufficient, we've been doing fine. I am currently 16. I want to go to japan by next year, using some money i've saved up. I would like to live there for at least a while, but of course things don't always work out so easily.
Mexican citizen(born there)
American citizen
have my 10 year passport
i want to live in tokyo prefferably. so, a general set of questions.
how much should i have saved up?
approx how long can i expect to be able to stay?
where could i live long term?
and any other things i should take into serious consideration?
i asked these because i read through the whole thread, but because of the age difference it may be different.
Also, i've been doing the Rosetta Stone japanese stuff, i know most ppl dismiss it but at this point it's all i have access to. i'm on cd2 out of 3, so im doing ok, and watch most japanese shows with a fluid understanding

I can't answer your questions with any detail, but I can tell you this. Japan has to really want you for you to be able to work and live there. In that I mean, you should be a desirable citizen and all that. It can still be done, undoubtedly, but it'll be difficult moving by yourself at 16.

Fortunately, there are a lot of high school students who have moved out and live alone in Japan. It's not an uncommon thing there. You shouldn't feel too out of place for living alone, but the problem is being able to find a job as a foreigner at 16 and not being fluent in Japanese.

Are you an emancipated minor? I don't know how the laws will work in Japan and if they will even recognize that over there.

bumping an awesome Japan thread

What are some cool places that one can visit in Osaka? I only area I really know is Dotonbori, and you /trv/lers usually say that Osaka is better than Tokyo.
>> Anonymous
>>75307
Seconded, I'm far more interested in Osaka than Tokyo, you have anything on it?
>> Anonymous

>>75312
Depends on what you want I guess, and which time of the year you're going. I had fun going to concerts in Osaka Big Cat and just generally hanging around in amemura and shinsaibashi. Doing shopping in den den town, walking around Tsurumi-ryokuchi park. The Kaiyuukan aquarium and the Tennouji zoo are awesome, if you like animals. Some nice love hotels around the west end of Dotonbori.

I never really got the hang of Umeda, but I guess there's fun to be had over there as well.

Other than that, day trips to Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, etc. Go watch a Hanshin Tigers game, or sumo if it's time for Osaka bashi or whatever.

Next time I'm going, I'll check out the world expo memorial park and the farm museum.

From August to July, so yeah doesn't really matter when.

What are the good places to eat, party etc? Price isn't that important.
>> Anonymous
>>75334
Sorry, I was on a really tight budget so no partying and eating out only in the cheapest places. There's lots of restaurants in Umeda and around Dotonbori. Google probably knows more.

But yeah, since you're going to be there that long, see the Tigers and sumo. Osaka bashi should be sometime during the spring. During sakura season, the most popular places are Osaka castle and Osaka mint bureau. Though if you're at all able, you should go to Kyoto, as there are a lot more famous sakura spots over there. Ditto for maple/autumn season. Most of the cool festivals (setsubun, aoi matsuri...) are held/better there too.

Cool, but doesn't really give much of a view into Japan's drug culture (other than the authorities are anti-drug, and therefore you'll be less likely to find any than in say, Europe or Canada. But that much I already knew anyway). Those type of advertisements are also all over America, for example, yet finding drugs is rarely a problem and drug-laws are often spottily enforced.

Although I've been to Japan it was on a high school trip so I can't comment much. However, I noticed tons of marijuana leaves on hats, towels, bracelets, etc. I'm pretty sure it's because the whole Rastafarian thing is somewhat popular there.
However, the penalties for drug use are really high. Like, you're fucked if you're caught. I googled around and the info was pretty obvious i.e. ecstasy @ clubs etc. All the drugs are basically handled by the Yakuza.
>> Anonymous
>>76966
You'd best be careful around drugs in Japan as a visitor. The authorities don't joke around when it comes to drugs. There is definitely a big underground drug culture there, as with anywhere, but it would probably be best to be introduced to it by someone you know at a party or something.
>> Anonymous
>>77053
This. If you're gonna do it, be smart. If you don't know Japanese you could get really fucked over. Have a Japanese friend(keyword here is friend) watch your back/get you the shit. But FYI the police can hold you for 72 hours without charge. Additionally they can request up to 2 more 10 day extensions, rounding out your potential jail time to 23 days w/o charges filed. Have fun with your drugs.

On this note, how common are drug-doing Japanese in comparison to North Americans or Europeans (less, I know, but by what extent is what I'm wondering)? Would it be best to get contacts through other Westerners?

The drug culture in Japan could be seen as more serious than the Western drug culture. For one, the most popular illegal drug in Japan is the ultra-dangerous 'speed', while in probably most Western countries, it's the not-so-dangerous marijuana. Drugs are not mainstream, like they're not exactly mainstream in the West, but if you look, you'll find it, just like here.

First pathetic weeaboo fucks, put it to rest. Go to the forums on bigdaikon if you want to learn how to whoremonger in Japan. There are millions of girls who will suck even your pathetic dicks here. I am a 198cm 130kg huge fat white american and I had to beat the womens off with a stick (because I'm married-- otherwise I'm be neckdeep like any other foreigner here.) You want the hot school girls from your animu fantasies, then you better be good looking and rich, the rest of you get the still hot (by your standards) christmas cake (look it up) career women who have idealized views of romantic foreigners (public displays win over big with this crowd) even when you're plowing them up the poop chute.

Second, no jobs without degrees. None that will pay you a living wage anyway. Same as the rest of the world. Chances of you getting a working visa without a degree about 0.0006%. Chances of you getting to an interview where a company refuses to sponser your working visa without a degree 0.0007%. Go back to school or enjoy your poverty.

Actually, all they learn are set phrases and other pointless shit. Japanese people are generally quite bad at English, even though they study it for such a long time. There is SO DAMN MUCH marijuana memorabilia in Japan. There are seriously random pot leaves on everything. The more I see, the less I believe that anyone in Japan actually smokes.
>> Anonymous
When I was in Japan last year, I was coming out of the subway, and I saw this stunning, amazingly beautiful girl walking towards me. She was smoking what I assumed was a cigarette, but as she grew nearer, could smell was weed. When we passed each other, she said nothing and handed me the joint she was smoking, and she continued to the subway.
Then I smoked the joint. :3
Anyway, there's a pretty big ignorance on many peoples' parts in Japan about weed. I've seen groups of kids openly smoking it on a street corner about 10 feet from a koban (small police station), so there's obviously a sense of inexperience with it even with the authorities. What people have said is true though, if you get caught, you're fucked, so it's a good idea not to do drugs in japan as a guest.

According to the Japanese law:
People go to jail for possessing less than one gram of hemp and they face many social penalties too (loss of job, expulsion from schools, etc.). Theoretically you can go to prison for five years for a single joint. Larger quantities, cultivation, or smuggling will lead to prison sentences of up to seven years. Smugglers caught with a few hundred grams to a few kg of cannabis are routinely sent to prison for 3-4 years. Discipline in Japanese prisons is extremely strict and conditions are harsh.

All foreigners caught with marijuana will be deported after having served their sentence, with a life-time ban on returning into the country (remember when Paul McCartney got caught with weed there? Even someone as famous as him wasn't re-admitted until 11 years later).

Sadly for you, the pound is very weak against the yen at the moment.

Are you staying in a hostel or a hotel? The place I usually stay at is currently about £55 per night, so for 14 nights that's £770... not leaving you a lot left for the metro, going out and shopping, but it's certainly achievable.

I didn't mean to insult people by calling kyoto overpriced, but when I was there, I found things on the surface to be more expensive, and it also cost a lot of money to get there from Tokyo, which is where I was based. The people were also snobby.

and 2nd, I have no idea why everybody is assuming I'm a guy. I thought it was obvious in my manner of speech that I was a girl, but I was just trying to write for guys because the readers are probably a majority of guys.

anyway, this thread was a response to a guy asking about a cheap way to stay in Japan so I tried to think of cheap alternatives to the stuff I did there, 'cause someone else was paying my way there. I'm going again soon, though, and I'll have to live on a budget. Hopefully, all the info posted by anons will help me too.

Posting from the last night of my vacation to Japan. Suggesting a love hotel for regular accommodation. I got lucky with a local girl and actually had a reason to use one for its intended purpose. The area around it was as seedy as any place else but the rates and the insides were fantastic. It was actually very classy, pleasant, and comfortable. They're a little bit more expensive than the popular toyoko inn line of business hotels but the room I was in for a few hours had so many little accouterments (black light in bathroom, super-comfy reclining bed, huge HDTV, sexy interior all around) that made it all worth it
