Bogota Anonymous
Sup /trv/

Amerifag here....I had the opportunity to work with a bunch of Colombian college students over the summer, and they've invited me down to Bogota around new years. I've heard stories of the FARC and all the crazy rebel shit down there, but they seem to have been minimized and the Colombians I talked to said they aren't an issue anymore.

Any suggestions/warnings before I go down there? Housing is a non-issue...I'll be staying with a friend.

They are bringing you down there to kidnap you and hold you for ransom.

as long as you are with the colombians, you should be fine. just don't bring any souvenir kilos back.

If anyone asks you to go for a "helicopter ride" and your friends say they'll meet you back in New York, don't get on the helicopter.

It really has gotten better. I still wouldn't got to countryside though. The major cities (Bogota, Medellin, Barranquilla, etc) are as safe as major cities usually are-- don't be stupid about things, but you probably will not be kidnapped for your yanqui dollars.

FARC is pretty much on the verge of defeat, due to US support the colombian army went from pathetic group of gigantic pussies to actual conventional army that is currently raping the shit out of them.

The war with the FARC is still very much alive, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. However the current government has gone to great lengths to isolate the cities from the violence, so if you just stay in Bogota you will be fine.

lol - Not really anything to worry about OP, but reading this thread reminded me of this guy who was travelling S. America & he had some powdered milk with him.
The Columbian 5-0 stopped him & made him eat it, just to prove it wasn't coke (real coke is lethal when ingested).

Where is OP's pic?

Essentially There is a safe area of land around the cost in the northern part of the country, all the major cities are perfectly safe, and the roads between them are secured by the army and about as safe as those in any major South American country.

As long as you stick to these areas you´ll be absoloutly fine.

BUT.... DO NOT just decide to go ambling about the land. This isn´t a place like Bolivia or Chile where you can ride to any part of the country on a public bus and expect to stay safely in any hotel/residencial/alojamiento without trouble.

Oh boy, I know what you're talking about. Young and stupid as I was I actually though "nah, can't be that dangerous" and I ventured out far from the city. Slept at some kind of small inn and woke up with a gun to my head. Somehow I managed to talk myself out of the situation, well actually money talked my way out of the situation since I gave them all I had. I walked 15 miles back to Bogota after that... quite an experience.
