Are all the stereotypes about gypsies true?
>> Anonymous
is that naked boy attached to a leash?

sweet!
>> sage
yes, they are pick pockets, thieves you name it. They have a culture which shuns education and feel that the only way to live as part of their culture is to take from others.

I saw many in italia and was most disappointed because I thought they would be cool like in the books and movies.

Yes. They are awful.

In Andalusia some of them actually got their shit together, managed to quit that criminal lifestyle and enjoy a certain degree of integration. The romanticised favourable 19th century view of them comes from those Andalucian gitanos. They still have somewhat high crime-rates compared to the local population, but most of them go to work and live normal lifes. They are mostly lower-class and extremely tribalistic, but compared to other gypsy groups in Europe they are like aristocracy (for instance they dislike Romanian gypsies for the same reasons as the Spanish do). Also you can say that Andalusian folklore is actually gypsy folklore, the vast majority of flamenco artists and bullfighters are actually gypsies. And two ethnic gypsies in the Spanish national football team: Dani Güiza and Sergio Ramos. So no, the stereotype doesn't quite work there.

we have gypsies in America too. I live in Northern California and a grocery store actually outlaws gypsies unofficially.

They constantly wander in, take food, give it to kids so they can't be arrested, and wander out.

Girl who worked at a hotel I stayed at in Rome seemed pretty cosmopolitan and educated, had a Pakistani boyfriend who was in engineering school, knew a lot about contemporary art. Found out later she was Roumanian, technically a gypsy. I wouldn't have known if she hadn't told me. Makes me wonder how many people you see on the street in Europe, looking all first-world, are actually assimilated gypsies.

Here in Turkey, while almost none of them have proper jobs, the legality of their livelihoods vary. Most of them are scavengers, going through trash containers to look for stuff they could use or sell to recycling plants. Some others are thieves, pickpockets and drug dealers. Quite a few are musicians, be it street musicians or, as in some specific neighborhoods, have turned their homes into restaurants where they also provide entertainment. You will also see lots of them peddling flowers (women) or handkerchiefs (kids) in busy streets and squares.

All in all, I don't cross the street when I see a gypsy, maybe just watch my pockets.

it's more fun to be the thief.

Hoping that all these posts ain't trolls. Most gypsies are decent people: its just that stereotypes are there cause people need a scapegoat. Also Italië = new nazi roma rules.

I used to see some in Lisbon. The women would walk around holding dirty babies and ask for money for food, especially on the train to Cascais. But the women were always really fat. It didn't seem food was an emergency.

You need to move.

No, those guys don't live in my neighborhood anymore.
They used to live in an abandoned house (without water or electricity), but eventually they god evicted and left.

Here in Slovenia one gypsy family is refusing to send their children to school until they get them more social support. They already have +1000€ of support because they have 7 kids and the parents are unemployed.

They're thieving scumbags with a bit more intelligence and less violent acting than negros.

I live in Wichita, Kansas. There's a big house on the south side full of statues, and that's where the Gypsy King lives. Takes tribute from all the gypsies in town. I thought it was folklore.
Turns out that yeah, there's gypsy families that send their kids through grocery stores grabbing as much as they can fit in their pockets. And there's gypsy scrap metal dealers that *will* screw you over if you don't confront them. Sad really.
