I'm planning a 'trip' to Japan in December '08. I'm a 20 year old resident of California; United States citizen. I've set aside $1500 thus far, but I plan to have $5000 set aside by that time. Orally, my Japanese is intermediate, but I can't read Kanji worth shit (only about 200 characters).

I'm planning on staying there for the full 3 months that a tourist visa will allow. My main focus is to become a Gaijin model, but I'd ultimately need a sponsor to make that possible. I've heard Harajuku is a popular location for models to congregate, so I've decided to find a Gaijin house or hostel in the area if at all possible.

My questions being:
-Are there any other locations other than Harajuku that might grant me better exposure as an aspiring gaijin model?
-Is it possible to pay for housing/food for 3 months with $5000? (hostel or gaijin house)
-Are there any gaijin friendly sites for making contacts in Japan before making the venture? I have a mixi, but I was wondering if there was something better.
-Are there any known modeling talent agencies in California that communicate with Japan?

OP here,

Thank you both very much for the helpful posts. I'll look into these options further.

I haven't heard of any of these 'small schools', but they seem like a nice option to research further. Does anyone have any links by any chance?
