Hey /trv/

where's the best place to get money exchanged?

Going from the UK to the USA, which side should i get the money exchanged?

Anyone with any ideas on places with good rates?

No helpful advice to give, but oh man you must be kicking yourself you didn't come when the exchange rate was 2:1

Your local bureau de change. Try marks & spencer or something.

Yeah those days are over. I bought a load of dollars at a rate of $2.1 to £1. Now they're down to $1.47 to £1. Cha-ching.

Yeh i saw marks and spencers rates, and i had a look at my local post office and the rates are a bit better there.

So is getting the dollars over here a better idea?

Just look at the fees each of them charges and choose the one that's gonna steal the smallest amount of your money.

You know what, this country is such a rip-off I would be surprised of the best deal were to be found here. Every time I go to France, the channel tunnel on their side has far better deals than anywhere in the UK. They were still trading pounds for euros at the 1.44~ rate when it had sunk to 1.26.

Thats what i'm doing, just need to know where else offers this.

don't use the post office... they may not charge a fee, but they make their money by giving you a poor rate.

I highly recommend going to an American Express travel office (google that to find one) if you have one near you. They always have the best rates on dollars. You can also collect it at the airport if you do it online (not sure if there's a fee for that).

That's what i assumed, but the rate is higher than the marks and spencers one.

Just using ATMs is usually best. Ask your bank what the conversion fee is, if there is any.

This is what i do. My bank doesn't charge me any ATM fees, using ATMs in foreign country fees, or any currency conversion fees. It's not quite mid-market rate, but it's better than what's on the street and i don't have to haggle with any swarthy bastards when i need some cash.

I assume changing at a US bank would be cheaper than a UK bank.
