Dutchfag reporting in.

I am going to spend this christmas in London with a friend.
So my question is.
Is there anything big, spectacular or romantic I can take her to during Christmas time in London?
>> Anonymous
Take her to Harrods and let her spend all your money.

If you posted about "taking" (paying for) your "friend" (not someone you're fucking) to go somewhere "romantic" (with hopes of moving out of the Friend Zone) with you during Christmas (ghey), then you already blew your choad cover.

Take her ice skating! London has a number of outdoor skating rinks that pop up from Nov - Jan, one of the best being in the courtyard of Somerset House. There's are others too, just search for 'somerset house ice skating' and you should find lots of info. Don't just turn up though, the most popular rinks often require you to book well in advance.

London eye is also good when the sun is setting or at night, again you need to book early and the chances are it could rain and be shit.

If you go on a Sunday, head over to Spitalfields market for the Chrismas markets, the whole area is buzzing. Also check out the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, which usually has a lot going on too. If you both eat meat, I recommend a Sunday lunch at the Morgan Arms in Mile End. It seems out the way, but it's only a few stops on the tube and they serve great food and wine for reasonable money (for London). I'd called it laid back romantic.

Stick around Brick Lane for some fun nightlife without that attitude. Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes is also a great place to hang out (rather than bowl), lots of good music and people having a good time.

Stay clear of Leicester Square & Piccadilly Circus at night, just lots of expensive clubs and attitude going on.

If you haven't picked a hotel yet, I can recommend a few (depends a bit if you're sharing a room/bed).

>> The Russell Hotel - big, grand, good room rates online, central
>> Miller's Residence - Notting Hill, small, super romantic and quirky, the owner is crazy cool, not cheap, but reasonable prices
>> Regency House Hotel is cheap (for London) and in a great location, nice building and perfectly good, classic rooms.

There are loads of other's of course, let me know if you want something specific, I might be able to help. Definately book online - LOADS cheaper!

Morgan Arms is still a good option if you really good traditional British food (pretty rare, especially in London pubs).

Otherwise Smith's of Smithfield is really good next to Smithfield market (all meat comes fresh from the market each day) in Farringdon. Downstairs is quite casual dining with a great bar (good choice of beers!), upstairs is the restaurant which features a more sophisticated menu. Avoid the downstairs at lunch time and after 5pm as it's full of city workers, restaurant is better in the evenings when it's more romantic (less business meetings going on).

Christopher's in Covent Garden is also nice to take a lady to without being too indimidating, it says it's an American bar and grill, but don't let that put you off, it's certainly no TGI Fridays, people I've taken there are always impressed, it has a beautiful dining area. Tip: ask if they have a private table rather than being inbetween people.

Also, check out the Southbank Centre for good places to eat in the day and evening, there's the Skylon restaurant in the Royal Festival Hall which is best at night (great romantic lighting, food and views of the river, close to the London Eye) and lots of other good chain restaurants like Canteen, Strada, Ping Pong and Wagamamas in that area which are good in the day or at night.

Other good food pubs worth mentioning are the Queen's Head & Artichoke near Regent's Park (intimate victorian dining room upstairs, pub downstairs) and Somers Town Coffee House (not really a coffee house) between Euston and Kings Cross.

Once again sir, thank you so much for your help and time.
If you dont mind, i want to bother you some more.
Are there any good bars to play billiard or pool?
Also, is the Hyde park really that beautiful with christmas? Or what park has all the nice light decorations..

No problem at all!

There are a few pool halls called the 'Elbow Room' dotted around town, they're all good but can get a bit hostile later at night depending on the crowd.
I usually go to a bar called 19:20 in Clerkenwell (Farringdon tube), they have 4 or 5`pool tables and it's a lot more chilled out. They have a nice bar downstairs too, but don't bother with the food. There's actually a pub called 'The Slaughtered Lamb' just a few doors down, they have good drinks and food, plus often really good live music downstairs.

Hyde Park depends on the weather, but both it and Regent's Park are beautifully mantained. There will probably be an ice rink in Hyde Park, probably check London event listings websites closer to the time to see if there are any events in the parks. It's always nice to take a walk down by the ponds, but at that time of year you'll have to wrap up really warm!

If you want to do somthing classy and you have the time , you could always go to the royal opera house in covent garden . Im doing this with a friend of mine from bulgaria this christmas . If you book one of the cheap seats (ie, up in the ampithertre or with a restricted view) you can get two tickets for as little as £10 , or ones for reasonably good seats for £40-£50 the pair

This thread is very helpful to me also. I am going to London in November with some friends and it is good to know of places other than the travel guide.
