The Aurora Anonymous
Who's seen it? When is the best time to view it? What is the best civilised country to view it?

My girlfriend and I are thinking of heading to Norway next year to see it.

Winter is generally the best time to view aurora. Head to Iceland if you really want to see some aurora. Or just constantly check spaceweather.com

This is really the only goal I have in life. One day...

It's funny to think this is something people want to see like the pyramids or something like that when I see it almost every year.

Arg! I have some friends in Canada that laugh at me every time I talk about how much I want to see the northern lights. They get to see them all the time, and with beautiful scenery, to boot.

I'm in Texas - flat with smoggy skies. Bah!

man, that looks awesome.
wish i could see it, but i live in california.

I'm in Canada but not Northern Canada. To see the aurora has also been in my list of things to do before I die. I'm almost ashamed to admit it but it's mainly because of the series of books by Philip Pullman that made it out to be something wonderful and magical.

the closer you go to the north magnetic pole the better it gets.
you also need darkness, so summer is out of the question and you need clear skies, so anywhere near an ocean is no good.
go to edmonton in winter, rent a car and drive out of town north a couple hours and wait

So the parts in or near light blue are the best places to see it?
>> Anonymous
I was stationed in northern Sweden for military duty, so I saw it alot during the winter. It's pretty neat.

i need to see this one day
>> Anonymous
is it appearing EVERY night during whole winter, or just couple nights / year?
>> Anonymous
You can find it basically anywhere up North. Just be sure to stay away from light polluted places and you'll be able to see it.

I've seen it in Northern Norway, it's very beuatiful, saw it in the winter. Don't know what is the best time though.

Civilized countries, well Norway is great. I guess Iceland and Canada would be nice too.. Greenland would probably be perfect, but to be frank they're not excactly "civilized"

Saw it in Sweden. Definitely one among the 1001 things you need to see before you die.

so, how long should one's trip be to have high probability of seeing Aurora? are there certain nights that have higher chance of displaying aurora? (ie, aquinoxium, just a random guess)

I live 200 km north of Quebec city. We see them a couple times a year but it's not as impressive as in the picture unless you go further north.
