Hey /trv/,

I'm moving to Vancouver early next year for school.
What is there to do?
I'm kind of an artfag/musicfag and I don't know how I'll like it.

Well I've traveled all over Canada and the US, and Vancouver was the best city I've been to.

San Diego comes in second though.

What is so cool about San Diego? You must explain this.

Nice people, great nightlife, lot's of stuff to do, great restaurants, great bus and skytrain system, and is generally a very livable city.

Outright lie. People here are often cold and stuck up.
>>great nightlife
It's not too bad.
>>lot's of stuff to do
If you like the outdoors, indeed.
>>great restaurants
Very much so. Enjoy food from everywhere abit at inflated prices.
>>great bus and skytrain system
Fuck no, have you even taken either one of them?
>>and is generally a very EXPENSIVE city.
fix'd. Japan is cheaper then here.

wtf, if the people here were cold and stuck up, thats because you were being an ass

i've lived here my entire life (23 years) and rarely ever had someone be stuck up, as long as your curteous to them, they'll be curteous to you

People in Vancouver are super friendly.
Also Asians.
>> Anonymous
>>45253
are they dirt asians mostly or the pretty ones?
>> Anonymous
It's mostly East-Asians in Vancouver, not brown South Asians if that's what you mean by "dirt" Asians. The biggest group is Chinese though, who are not quite as hot as Japs but still pretty.

depends what gender you're talking about. i find that on the whole male chinks are more attractive than male japs.

Hey I'm from North Van.
Depending if you can make it in Summer/end of summer.
PNE fair comes around. Richmond Night market is tons of fun, lots to see there. Take a morning trip and go have lunch at Granville Island. If your fit at all, hike up Grouse Mountain(*Grouse Grind), or if your not, take the cable car. Like 30$ a ticket tho...
Take a walk around the Sea Wall, check out Stanley Park.
I'm not sure about art/music, but we have our fill of Clubs in Vancouver, FYI the club "Atlantis" is where a lot of Asian's like to go. Other then that all the other clubs are pretty mixed.
Metropolis at Metrotown would be Vancouvers "big" mall if you wanna do local shopping.
Down Town Vancouver, Robson Street is a good place to check out too.
Vancouver is an amazing city, super multi cultural so there isn't any discrimination here.
>> Anonymous
Oh yah, the Downtown East side is where a lot of our homeless/druggies gather, avoid there if you can?

Another thing - Celebration of Light!!!
Every summer there is a huge pyro-musical fireworks competition that goes on. You can watch it from any of the following beaches. English Bay, Kitsalano, Vanier Park, Jericho Beach. (English Bay is your best bet.)
Its a competition by a couple countries. Canada is July 23. USA July 26. China July 30. FINALE Aug 2.
They all start at 10pm. Hmm we seem to have less countries this year...

How hard would it be to find a decent part-time job to pay rent while I'm going to school?
And are there any cheap places to stay? I know it's probably a stretch but I'll sleep in the back of a car if I have to.
>> Anonymous
Van's like any other city, theres always local business hiring.

Might help.
Cheapest place to stay would be with "friends/family" obviously. Got no friends? Make some FAST. Vancouver overall is damn expensive to live in. Not sure what I could tell you about that...

Vancouver is a great city. It's really clean. Very little polution, the air is easy to breathe. People are friendly. It seems like a popular destination for immigrants from all over the world. Walk around and you'll hear all kinds of accents.

The weather is pretty fantastic in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. However, it rains for months at a time in the Winter.

Great city to be outdoors in, though. And fantastic for people watching. Especially if you like Asian fashion. There are a lot of kids that come over to learn English.

I honestly find Vancouver to be a hideous city. The buildings are just horribly ugly and uniform. Been there once as a kid, don't remember much, so I'm not much help on that issue.

Vancouver is full of:
Elitists, yuppies, bleeding-heart liberals, and socialists

Comprised of:
Chinks, gooks, hindus, and sand-nigger terrorists.

If you like these kinds of people, feel free to stop by our fair city. I sure don't.

I just came back from Vancouver. It was nice enough. Granville Island and Stanely Park are fun. Driving is kind of a pain in the ass though and the weather is rather inconsistant.

I want to move to Vancouver, and I live in fail taco-country. Any sugestions? Any way to live there legaly? is it true Canada accepts you as long as you speak english, french, have a degree, and are young?

Or, at least, any Canadian willing to marry a taco-speaking weaboo?

Vancouverite here. Honestly this city has its upsides and downsides, but more of the latter. Over half of the population in the GVRD is an immigrant or the child of one. Friendlyness is dependant on location, usually asians and caucasians are cold or ignorant to eachother, and keep to their own. Transit is fucking lame, it takes forever to get anywhere and it's crowded as shit. But you'll learn to like neighborhoods like Commercial drive (yuppies galore, but good pubs and food, friendly atmosphere), Robson street, Granville island, etc. It is fuckass expensive (rent especially), and rains all the fucking time.

Lots of shit sucks, but the city has it's gems. Just be sure to meet some decent people and you'll find the good parts of the city fast.

Also, vancouver has it's own imageboard - vancitychan.ca

Thanks all for the info.

Again, many thanks in advance.

Well New West is a part of Vancouver. The Greater Vancouver Regional District (actually I believe they changed the official name from GVRD to Metro-Vancouver, which is faggy but whatever) Consists of Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, New West, Port Moody, Surrey, Langley, Richmond, etc etc etc. Look it up on google maps and you'll see its all connected.

That said, New West in particular is a verry hilly area near the "center of town", for lack of a better word. Some of the residential areas around it are kinda run down, or are otherwise not the nicest places to live, but not ALL of New West is bad. Personally, I would rather live in Burnaby though.

Whatever you do, never live anywhere under the fraser river. Anywhere is a palace compared to there (this means langley, surrey, richmond, etc.). Again, look up the area on google maps and learn the layout.

Vancouver!
Fuck yeah!

Yeah, Vancouver (and I am talking about Greater Vancouver) has its ups and downs. Its a fairly new city, it was pretty much a village before that expo in 1986. From then on it realy grew up, and it keeps growing. Thus it has many problems any fast growing city does. Lots of new immigrants who barely speak english/form their own neighbourhoods - most of Richmond is pretty much chinese-only, and Surrey has large east-indian population. Yeah, I am one of them, sorry for me engrish.
Home prices are insane and are not going to fall for at least another 20 years - you are looking at 300k for 1b appartment, though you might find an apartment for rent for $600 somewhere in Surrey.
Prices in general are very high. People prefer shop in Alberta or US if they can. Public transportation is a pain, and using your own vehicle is not so great either, especialy if you going downtown. Roads were never planned for such a huge population.
It has almost no old buildings, if you are into that kind of shit you better go to Quebec.
If you are an active man and love to bike/hike/swim you will love it. Night life is nothing to write home about.
People can be friendly if you are friendly with them, but most residents of BC outside Vancouver find it very cold and hostile. Crime is on the rise, what with all those gangs from Asia and local drug dealers, but nowhere as high as in NY, of course.
In last 3 years Vancouver really started to change. Most oldish apartments are beign torned down and new highrisers are being built. There are lots of new residential highrisers all over New West, Surrey, Burnaby, Vancouver.
Its just a city, I guess. A rapidly growing young city located in a beautiful place.

Ah yes, "New York", the epitome of crime. Funny, then, that the rates for most crimes are significantly lower in NYC than Vancouver?

Criminal offence | rate/100,000 in NYC | rate/100,000 in Van (CMA)

Violent crime | 636 | 1,089
Burglary | 271 | 1,121
Auto theft | 195 | 745
Homicide | 7 | 2.5

Pretty funny seeing the shock of Vancouverites upon learning of someone not being completely ecstatic about their city.

Don't get me wrong, its a pretty cool city, but the "pride" of the locals is downright irritating.
>> Anonymous
>>49750
>Homicide | 7 | 2.5
america still wins in the only one that counts
>> Anonymous
>>49753
Thats the one that counts the LEAST. While the severity of the crime might make it "more important", the fact that a mere 2-7 people out of every 100,000 are killed make it all but irrelevant. In either city, your chances of being murdered are ridiculously slim. What you do stand a chance at being involved in however, are robberies, burglaries, assaults, rapes (well, maybe not so much for us), etc. And as far as all these go, Vancouver is worse.

There's also Wreck Beach, the clothing-optional beach near UBC.

Vancouver is ass-boring
I've been to all the attractions here, and so far the best was the suspension bridge.
