I'll be spending nine weeks in Columbus, Ohio starting mid June and I've never been so far east before.

I'm currently in Seattle and was wondering how the people and overall feel of the city compares. I've heard people can be somewhat stuck up or a little full of themselves out east but I think this is just your standard sheltered local talk.

/trv/'s thoughts and feelings on Columbus?

We say the same thing about you.
Just be prepared for a lot of old people, and it's also extremely boring compared to West Coast cities. Also, pretty much every Midwestern city besides Chicago is exactly the same (you should drive to Chicago for a few days also)

East coast dweller here. I used to live on the West coast so I can understand your mistake, but just for the record, Ohio is not "out east". It's basically the Midwest. Flyoverland. Got it? Good.

As for Columbus, well, I hope you like frat parties.

I figured as much, I'll be staying in a dorm at Ohio State University for the time I'll be there, does that changes things as far as things to do?
Anyone actually at Ohio State here now?

Well, I go to OSU, so I know firsthand. You're going to be living on campus, which is pretty safe, but you're probably going to be having a meal plan and won't be able to cook for yourself. In that case, go to Mirror Lake Cafe or Marketplace (But stay away from East/West because it is totally not good for you). Those places are the best to eat food ON CAMPUS. If you don’t have a meal plan, there are a lot of different kinds of food all down High Street to try. If you're 21, there are bars right off campus on High Street you can go to.

If you like art, down past High Street and King Ave there is The ShortNorth, which is the art district. Every first weekend of the month there is gallery hop and people just go around from gallery to gallery looking at different art, enjoying the company of your friends and meeting new people. A lot of times there will be live music at places and there are a lot of places to go for food. If you’re down there you should try Jenny’s Ice Cream, I heard it’s really good. As for shopping, there is Easton Town Center and Polaris, both of which have amazing stores to choose from.

There are always tons of bands coming to Columbus, so you’ll have to look out for what is happening at the Newport, Skully’s, Brothers, etc. You can go to the “Shoenion”, which is the Union that is located in the football stadium (“The Shoe”) and get discount tickets with your BuckID for anything a lot of things happening in Columbus, like ballets, concerts, admission to the art museum, etc. There are a lot of people in Columbus, so there is always something going on here.
If you have any more questions, I’d be glad to answer them.

Wow thanks a ton. I'll copy and paste your wise words and save for later.

Everything sounds right up my alley, music, art, bars. I'm feeling just fine about things now.

Generally how would you describe the student body? Upper class or middle? I'm not a bum by any means but I'm pretty conservative about spending money out of necessity. Are people more interested in other people or just material stuff. This is all terribly general of course I know but most campuses have a pretty solid culture.

OSU students cover a wide range, but most of the people I know are generally middle class. All of my friends have to work to pay the bills, and I don't know a lot of people who have their parents paying for everything. There are a lot of "poor college students" here.
There's a really strong sense of being a "buckeye" on campus, so if someone says "O-H" to you, don't forget to say "I-O" back to them, they will be thoroughly disappointed if you don't! If you're staying in North campus dorms it might be quieter, south tends to get rowdy and West campus is somewhere between.

YOUR TOWN

How's the campus over the summer? I'm sure most of the student body heads home but are there enough summer schoolers and other things going on so it doesn't feel like a complete ghost town?

It's not too bad since it's a huge school and people still hang around for summer classes. If you meet the right people, you can find good parties on the weekends.

Stuck up and full of themselves? In the Midwest? What fucking planet are you from?

Oh.

Seattle.

That's good news. I'll be in the dorms though so hopefully they'll be some hanging around.

Any other OSU students here with some more inside advice on the campus/people/dorms? This stuff is really great and I can't think of any other place to get it from as I know no one personally from the school.

Thanks for all the response thus far

i've only ever been there during the Ohio/Michigan football game, and i'm willing to bet that is a tad bit extreme for me to give you as an example. (after ohio won, the city exploded into partying, it was mob rule)
