Amsterdam /trv/,

i want to go there next week. been there before (its only a two hour drive). the last two times we stayed at camping zeeburg. it's a nice place esp. in the summer, but i don't really want to pitch a tent in early spring. they do have cabins, but the're priced much like hostels.

so, where else is a cool and cheap place to stay in amsterdam? give me all your insider information, experiences and also things to avoid.

>things to avoid.

Yeah, how about you avoid the Netherlands, and go some place that isn't full of overly pacifistic faggots?

You run the risk of being stabbed to death, while nobody will come to your rescue for fear of infringing upon the stabber's civil liberties.

I went to Amsterdam last weekend and stayed at camping zeeburg!
I had visited amsterdam and the camping before during the summertime but most hostels are so pricey half of the budget would have to be the overnighting.

It wasn't too cold if you had a good sleeping bag. The storm last monday was a bitch as you can see by the state of our tent...that's just the wind blowing against it.
The cabins at zeeburg are reasonably priced, I doubt you'll find a cheaper hostel...don't forget it's the low season so the cabins don't cost as much as they do during the summer.

The cheapest hostel we could find was a christian hostel...search and ye shall find.

Recommended coffeeshops : Café 420 and Hillstreet Blues Coffeeshop at Nieuwmarkt. If you meet a blazed out rasta there, tell him the boys from Gent say hi.

My Dutch mates generally recommend coffeeshop Prix d'Ami, with the special treat being the Fisherman's Friend strain. It's near Central Station, but in one of the side streets bordering the Nieuwendijk, probably the Haringpakkersstraat. Nothing else fancy in there though, except a lot of pool tables.

It's a shame you'll miss the coming weekend. clear skies for the first time in 2 weeks, reasonably warm too.
But after sunday it'll go to shit all over again though, fucking March storms.

Noob-question: Are coffee-shops in NL only about smoking weed or are they generally cool to hang around?

They're also to hang around in, but the shops are in the front so you're not required to consume there.

I know you're not happy with an answer like "It depends", but let me explain:

Coffeeshops come in various shapes and sizes, pretty much catering to every type of stoner out there. There's shops modeled after seedy brown cafés, with reggae playing in the background. There's loads of those.
There's shops where you walk in, buy weed, and walk out. No hassle, nowhere to stop and relax. Pretty much a counter only. (The Grey Area)
There's places with an oriental vibe, with tapestry on the walls, dim lighting and comfy chairs (the Dampkring, if I remember correctly)
There's a shop which, besides a fine selection of pot, also has one of the best breakfast menus in the city, Barney's, which is a respectable diner in itself.
There's even a hard-rock coffee shop, even though it hasn't been doing too well. (Blue.... something? The counter guy is an asshole, especially to tourists)
So you see, it all varies hugely and some really are nice places to chill, like a relaxed-version of your regular bar.
