I grew up in the southern US and the place I live now is like that, so I'm used to it. Religion is pig disgusting.

Just moved to Perth at the start of 2008, still my favourite place in Oz. In relation to the "everything is closed on Sundays" bit. This is generally true for the suburbs, but in the city, fremantle and rockingham (all easily accessible via train or bus) everything opens after 11am. So it's not too much of an issue if you're living/staying close to the city.

Perth is growing very quickly but like 60s Adelaide I expect they don't really have a long term plan. Perth will be a dud city in ~15 years. Right now, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are the best cities to live in. Sydney is okay but I wouldn't recommend it.
