hey /trv/ I'm interested in learning how to speak/write/etc. in Russian. What's the best way to go about doing this?

don't care if it takes a while, but I'd prefer if it didn't cost a whole lot.

I decided to start learning Russian last summer, and I learned quite a bit just from free internet sites. I'm not fluent, though I've been slacking a lot lately and could probably put more effort into it. You'll be able to get a basic grasp on the language with the following sites that I used:

http://www.russianlessons.net/
http://www.masterrussian.com/
http://speakrussian.blogspot.com/
http://www.lingvo.ru/lingvo/ (Dictionary)

Get an English to Russian dictionary, they help a ton. I also suggest trying to read blogs and watching Russian youtube videos after you learn the basics, that helps a lot too.

Download Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone.
Pimsleur is best for conversational, while Rosetta Stone is excellent for writing and vocabulary.
A lesson in each one a day will have you speaking in no time.

However, Rosetta Stone is a bit of a bitch to get through torrents. You'll have to mount the image of the .iso to get it to work properly.

Then why don't you, I don't know, LEARN the characters?
I learned them, then went to 2ch.ru and started to read the board names.
I felt like a faggot the time I read ????? out loud.
True story.

lol

but srsly, 2ch.ru is a vile place. It's like /b/ but with 1 moderator who shows up maybe once or twice a day to purge /b/.

but srsly, 2ch.ru is a vile place. It's like /b/ but with 1 moderator who shows up maybe once or twice a day to purge the random board. There are much better ways to work on your basic reading skills, for example like an above poster suggested, reading blogs.

If you play any vid games, get the russian version of them. I learned how to read and write from playing diablo ii in russian when i was younger. I could speak it fluently though so I guess that was a pretty major advantage.
