Reykjavik itself is a fine city, clean, very safe at all hours. It's expensive as any place I've ever been, though--for yourself and a companion, expect to spend $100USD/day easily. Also, the city itself is remarkably small, certainly smaller destination-wise than Boston if that's any use to you. My fiancee and I went for 4 days mid-week with no agenda or itinerary, and after a day and a half on foot, we were generally out of ideas and ended up getting out of the city, seeing the countryside on organized bus tours--the "Golden Circle" makes for a full day of getting around and seeing things you simply cannot see in the continental US. I highly recommend icelandair.com for inexpensive and comprehensive travel packages if that's your style. The nightlife is supposed to be phenomenal on the weekends, but we did not partake, however I highly recommend the flea market downtown after noon on Saturday.
