Hey /trv/

I'm going to be taking a trip to Paris soon for a few weeks. Its my first time going to Europe. Is there anything that I should know?

Visit Versailles on a weekend.

I went a few years ago so I don't know if they still do this, but if art galleries and stuff like that are your thing, go to the Musee Rodin and pick up a gallery pass. It's the least busy of the museums that use it, and once you have it you get instant access to the more popular museums. When I went to Paris in freezing January I can't tell you how satisfying it was jumping straight to the front of the line at the Louvre while everyone else was waiting outside for 2+ hours

They eat snails.

make sure to visit musuem websites. sometimes the first monday of every month or certain evenings during the week are free. I would suggest the catacombs as well.

if you're american they'll spit on you.

This may be true in some places, but Parisians are so rude that they just spit on everybody. Within ten minutes of observing people on the Metro I wanted to kill 3 of them.

I take the metro everyday and that's true
fuck if I could kill some people, it's just because metro workers are always in strike and they piss me off
I spit on them when I see these bastards when there is a strike fucking wankers

Also it's difficult to be a woman in metro because it's always crammed, not as worse as in Tokyo but shitty anyway

oh shit I have to the metro tomorow again

But I think it's the same think in big cities all around the world
At least the same in London when I went

Bask in your own imperial splendor, and laugh at how it took an entire continent banding together to almost match the economy of Amerikkka.

Enjoy your 230 hours of work this month and without real health insurance, my american friend.

I'll enjoy my 150 hours of work for July, my universal healthcare, then my annual 6 week summer holiday in August and an overall better life.

Well i'm glad to be a part of something original. BRB it's my my grandmother, she's 92. A number that has been used in the context of AGE in America twice since its foundation.

First off : I hope you'll enjoy your trip !
You're asking about things you should know - could you be a little more specific regarding what you plan to do/would like to experience while over there ?

This said, here are two universal pieces of advice : one, be polite and smile, people will always appreciate that - especially in Paris where so many can be grumpy 24/7. Two, don't hesitate in trying to speak French. People will appreciate the effort and no, they won't mock your attempts at trying to communicate.

Feel free to e-mail for more details, should you need it. I'm not going anywhere this summer, as I'm already showing an Aussie friend and my in-laws around the City of Light.

Paris was great when I went, but honestly just eat the best food you can because eating something like McDonalds or some American diners there is just waste of time compared to some of the amazing things they have there.
>> Anonymous
Oh and speak French even if you aren't very good at it, they appreciate it much more.

Don't expect much to be open in August as everyone goes on holiday.

Very true, that. Subways aside, fast-food restaurants just don't compare with their USA brethren.

Are all french people snotty cig smoking wine drinking assholes with an annoying accent like the stereotype, or are they just a slightly better looking version of british people?

Snotty : Depends on the area.
Cig-smoking : Depends on the area.
Wine-drinking : Oh yeah. Some areas more than other.
Assholes : Depends on the area.
Annoying accent : There are many accents in France, some of which are hardly understandable. Counts as annoying !
Better-looking versions of English people : We have our lot of ugly people too.

the musée Rodin might be quite empty in january but it's very appreciated in the summer.

Eat at Chartier. Relatively cheap, and absolutely unique. The waiters are very precipitant, it's the parisian way of serving in brasseries. Don't take it personally.

General advice about restaurants in France : waiters are always busy in most places because wages are so high they can't afford too many of them and there are not enough.. So don't expect excellent service. Also, tips are always included, you still can tip if you think he deserved it, but it is not rude not to.

Oh, and check the Catacombes ! Miles of underground corridors under the ground, very good place to stay away from the hear in the summer. And you're not going to see corridors lined with bones and skulls anywhere else anyway.
