I plan on visiting Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. I will probably spend the most time in Norway though since I'm a naturefag. Any tips? Also, should I learn a few words from each language or will I get by fine just using English?
>> Anonymous
Why people always ask if they need to learn a few words; unless you're going to France or similar "proud of their language" country, there's no reason why one should try to speak anything other than English (or similar language that you both can speak).

Especially if the pronunciation differs greatly... you'll just sound retarded to a native and at most earn pity.

tl;dr "Hey", is hey everywhere you go

Because refusing to speak the language of the country you are in is RUDE.

You come to my country and don't speak my language? Then get out because I won't speak to you.

And "hey" is not a word in any of those languages.

Hei and hej.

Get out.

There's thousands of languages in the world. Are you going to learn each one before visiting a country or region? Of course not. People can communicate by sign language or get the general understanding of a message even if one doesn't know the language.

Frenchfag detected... but don't worry, I've studied 3 years of French in case we meet.

>Hei and hej
And guess how are those pronounced? Very similar to >"hey"

And who the hell are you to speak for me? I pick up on languages quickly--enough to get by, not to have a political debate with.

lol. it's called a phrase book.

if you don't at least try to help the foreigner who can't speak the language but is trying to look up the phrase, your the rude asshole. being lost in a country you don't know the language for isn't a matter of rude or not, it's straight up dangerous.

OP here, ok I guess i'll get a phrase book so not to appear rude.

Now any tips or places I must visit from people who live there or already traveled there.

Then, by your previous assertion, you wouldn't have a conversation with yourself as a foreigner. Thanks for proving my point completely. :)

wat

No seriously, I have no clue what the hell you are talking about.

And good on you OP for the phrase book. My biggest pet peeve is a foreigner who just doesn't try.

Come to Holland instead. We speak English and as long as you aren't a kraut we could give a fuck.

Oh, so that's how it is? You clog up our Autobahn and in turn act cocky on the Interbutts? Don't make us conquer your country in 3 days again! I swear, we'll fucking execute your football team in the Amsterdam Arena this time.

Danishfag here. Pretty much everyone in Denmark, Norway and Sweden speak English.. In Denmark alone, 90+% speaks at least a little English and I'm sure it's similar in Norway and Sweden too.

Danes will probably lol and say "nice try" if you have a go at our language. Only tip I can really think of is that you should keep in mind that all of the countries have different currencies with different values, even though all of us use "kroner".

Swedes on average are the best non native English speakers in the EU. Danish are 4th and I'm guessing Norwegians are somewhere close, so you don't really have to bother with phrases etc

It's not like you aren't visiting the countries whose languages are closest to English, or anything. English is just Danish and Dutch that's been wussified by French, anyhow.

I'm a Canadian living in Sweden.

Everyone here speaks great English. Don't bother learning anything, except maybe a few things like "tack", "ursäkta", and so on.

Mainland Britain is the only place you'll struggle to get by with English. Well if you're planning on going to a KFC or Subway, etc...

If you can say "Rød grød med fløde" with no trouble at all you win the internets - unless you are a Danon

Danefag here. Depending on how long you are gonna stay in Denmark here is a couple of things for you to see:

Copenhagen (ofcourse) lots of sights here - chill out in Freetown Christiania for example or some of the old castles and buildings. Have a few beers - copenhagen is very expensive though.

You said you were a naturefag so Northern Jutland - small charming towns like Lønstrup and Løkken - very very beautiful nature in northern Jutland.

If you think Northern Jutland is too far, the island of "fyn" also has some really beautiful nature.

It's not in most of Denmark as well. As much as I love my country, Sweden and Norway has superior nature because they live in fuck huge countries compared to their population, as well as there are many places where humans don't go often.
