Right /trv/,

I'm going to Mexico for a month at the end of June. Hoping to travel around the south, Chiapas, Oaxaca etc. Is it do-able on less than £1000? Any advice on destinations etc?

yes, it's do-able, BUT: DON'T drink the water, used bottled. If you are serve tap water put some disinfectant in it and let it be for a while. Don't eat in taco stands all the time and beware of spices, they tend to be unkind on an unaccustomed stomach.

As for destinations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiapas Go to the landmarks section.

For Oaxaca check out Tehuantepec or Monte Albán, there's also the Guelaguetza festival in july.

Overall beware of scammers, donkey shows, the Zapatista Army and other turist traps which you probably already know about.

You have to know where to look for the kind of fun you want, the big cities are gonna have lots of bars with cheap beer and lose women (or men), malls and parks; on the other hand you can go for hikes on the poorer parts checking out the pyramids and other ruins, local museums and sightseeing, depends what you want, A has these benefits and risks, B has other benefits and risks.

There are zapatistas pretty much everywhere, including many in Oaxaca, plus they have they're own troubles there.

That reminds me, what is the perception of the EZLN in Mexico? I would expect that the government and mainstream media calls them terrorists. Are they on par with the ETA, IRA, PKK etc in terms of violence?

It was a joke when I said beware of them. While they call themselves an army they're not know for their violence (at least recently), at the moment they are more of a human rights movement and peace corp defending the freedoms of the indigenous people, equal rights for women and opposing globalization.

The Ejército Popular Revolucionario is more violent and somewhat related movement, though they mainly attack the police and the army, recently bombed some pipelines and a Sears store.
