so /trv/
im a 19 year old male britfag who has never been outside of the uk. I love the US and im planning on driving across america
im hoping to start from New York or around there and drive all the way to LA and then get a flight back from LAX to England
ive saved up about $3000 so far so i have some questions.
how long would the journey take?
how much money do you think i should bring?
can i drive with my british driving licence?
would it be better to rent a car or buy a cheap one and sell it in L.A?
protection wise would i be able to get a gun?
if not even an illegal way?
are there any certain things that are imporant to bring on this holiday?

any other advice would be great

AMERICA ... Fuck yeah!

also is there any places that i MUST visit on the way across america

It's really expensive to rent a car if you're under 25. Most places won't rent for you if you're under 21.

Buying a car might be a good option, but it will be expensive (a few thou) and might break down along the way. THEN what will you do?

couldnt i go to a shitty car dealership and get something for a thousand or two which will be quite reliable

no.

I mean, you can ask /o/ but they will probably tell you Volvo 240D

i found a a car to rent for 4 weeks for £490
do you think it would take more or less than 4 weeks to drive across america
>> Anonymous
>>49310

Less. You can drive across in 5 days comfortably.

If you take your time, stopping and hanging out along the way, I would schedule for two weeks.

Fellow britfag here living in the US

I'm pretty sure you can't buy a car in the US without an American driving licence (this might just be where I live though). Renting is probably your best bet.

4 weeks is good enough to see pretty much everything. You could happily meander across the states.

i think i am going to rent a car
i have to pay exra because im under 25 but shit happens.
does the petrol cost alot over there?

Not when compared to what we're used to. They might think it's expensive, but to us it's still mere pennies.

Driving across the entire country takes about 5 days, without really stopping except to sleep. More if you plan on doing anything besides stopping to take a piss.

You can't buy a gun unless your a united states citizen. You can bring your own, but I'm assuming you don't have one. There isn't any laws against say, hunting or going to a range so long as your "supervised by a united states citizen". You might want to go to a gunstore with a range and inquire on renting a gun to shoot at their range if you want, but carrying or aquiring a firearm, as a foriegner, is a good way to be imtimately familer with the US prison system. Terrorist laws, and what have you.

i think instead of booking 4 weeks car rental ill book 3 or 2 and a half
that would be enough time for a little sight seeing etc wouldnt it?

and i think i might go to a range because i wouldnt mind shooting a gun.

and would it be a good idea to buy a sat nav.
>> badwolf

I'd stick with your 4. 3 minimum. Unless you're easily bored and will only spend about an hour in each place.

Sat nav might be a good idea, but I don't know how accurate they are in the US. At least buy yourself a decent road atlas on arrival.

And yes, forget the gun idea. I've lived in the US now for 4 years and I've never had a situation where I've needed/wanted one.

Drop me an email if there's anything else you want to ask.

no you cant get a gun and what the fuck are you going to need one for? you're not going to get robbed every time you stop the car. i've been living here for 23 years and i've never been involved in or even witnessed a crime in my life

jesus christ the things some of these europeans believe.....

I think dude is mostly interested in getting one so he can just shoot it out in the desert or something. Every tourist from the UK wants to shoot guns, because they can't do it in their country.

Speaking of which, OP, if your interested in learning to shoot/ shooting a bunch of shit, you might want to call up a place that trains armed security guards in the USA. They cater to civilians and have the facilities to do so. I know the place I was trained catered to tourists from overseas.

Bad news about the gun chief, since you aren't a citizen, you can't buy or own a gun. Cali has shit gun laws anyways. But you should be able to go a gun range and rent some hand guns. Expect to pay 'bout 15 dollars for 50 rounds of 9mm, expect to pay more in California.
For more info, ask /k/, they live for this shit. Also, just rent a car. You don't wanna buy some junker and then have it break down on you in the middle of nowhere in a foreign country.

Depends on where you'll be and what you're interested in. In LA, expect to see sports cars, bums, and stuck up assholes. I could give some recommendations, but have no idea what you're interested in. Don't be so vague. And if you really are worried about protection, just buy a wrench or knife or something. You should be able to carry around a pocket knife any where in the US without getting in trouble. They're considered tools, not weapons in most cases in the US. Have fun.

The guys from Top Gear went to Florida and each bought a car for under $1000. Why don't you try that?

I wouldn't waste time with buying a gun. You're either going to get denied or be sold a stolen gun (which could get you int trouble, and I think just being a foreigner with a gun could get you in trouble), or maybe robbed by the people you're trying to buy from since you're a foreigner. If you just want to shoot a gun you can find a gun range and pay a fee and rent one. Or stop in the Midwest and just ASK anybody who's friendly with you if they know anybody who'd take you out to shoot. A Midwesterner will feel sorry for you because you come from an anti-gun totalitarian godless socialist society and will probably take you out to somebody's farm and let you shoot at old toilets or junk cars or something.

Well then, I say he stands a better chance of getting robbed by whoever he tries to by an illegal gun from than from a random robbery while minding his own legal business on the highway.
