The Borneo lonely planet guide said climbing Mt. Kinabalu was "Easy, someone in good physical health can easily do it. Wheelchair accessible"

WTF wheelchair?? It was a fucking hard climb (you need at least two days up and down) and the top bit is sheer granite face.

Depends on the country. At the very least the guides cover the basics well.

Try wikitravel.org first. If its entry for your choice of country is shit, go to the bookshop and thumb through the Lonely Planet.

Or just go without ever having looked at any form of guide. Much more exciting that way.

IMO lonely planet guides are 50% stuff that'll be in every tourist information pamphlet and 50% outdated phonebook. Just use wikitravel, the local tourist information desk and websites like hostelbookers/hostelworld/expedia. For good undiscovered hotels just ask the staff at your hostel/hotel, for good places to go out ask some cute young waitstaff at a restaurant.
