Northern Europe Anonymous
Hai guise. I've recently met some people from Northern Europe online and they've changed my mind about Scandinavia, Finland etc. I just thought the place was a slice of the north pole filled with assholes. I don't know why I had such a silly and racist opinion on the place. Now I want to tour the place. I'm an avid cyclist so I'll probably cycle around Finland and Sweden and go a little bit into Norway too.

Now I don't really now the standard procedure in /trv/ so I'll give you as much info as possible then ask questions.

- I'll arrive in the region by either train or plane.
- I'll start from either Trondheim or Helsinki
- I'll cycle in between
- I'm a college student so I'm not particularly wealthy

So my questions are

is finding camping space possible around these countries?

are cheap motels available? how cheap and clean are they?

Comment too long. Clickhereto view the full text.

>how much does food cost

Everything is expensive.

Theres lots of camping space, so no need to worry bout that.
Im not sure about cheap motels, in norway its expencive as fuck, probaly cheaper in sweden, dunno the price thou, yes, motels in scandinavia is clean, no roaches or mexicans.
Since you are cycling thru the northen part of scandinavia, the only thing to worrie about is drunken sami/lapp people, they will rape your sorry ass, otherwise, is safe to cycle, look out for gypsis too. food is cheaper in winland and sweden, you'll surive with 150kr pr day (bout 30 usd).
In Trondheim, you should see the Nidarosdomen, a nice old cathredal.

Dunno much about finnish cities, but Helsinki sucks imo. Go more for like Turku and Pori and after that somewhere in Lapland like Sodankyla and Rovanniemi. For Cycling Lapland should work fine.. And from there on you can go Norway.. In Norway the Northern parts got the best views.

Finland is not the cheapest place and Norway is very expensive imho. Sweden is in between I would say, and if you wanna party - go sweden lol.

Norway-fag here. I'll try to reply to your questions as best I can.

>>is finding camping space possible around these countries?

Yeah, should be sufficient with camping places around Norway atleast, and most of them are nice and problably well situated(near a lake, fjord etc.) It's not to expensive either, although anything is by foreigners standards.

>>are cheap motels available? how cheap and clean are they?

Motels in Norway isn't exactly cheap, but you should be able to get a decent place without epmptying your wallet. Mostly anything is clean in Norway, and theres no chance of you finding roaches or anything in your bed. It's pretty strict here on all those kinds of things and we have a well-functioning food department that closes down places that run rat farms.

>>how is the security situation for cyclists and campers? would I (I'll probably be alone) be attacked by drunk teenagers in the middle of the night?

It's absolutely safe here. You could probably sleep at a bench in a park in any city witout problems(the worst parts of Oslo might be the exception)

>>how much does food cost, considering I'll have 3 full meals since I'll be cycling?
A full size meal at McDonalds is about 10$. If you're going to eat dinner at a resturant it's going to be about 30-40$. A bread in a store is 2$.

>>what are some of THE MOST important sights on my way on <scnadinavia's major cities? Like TOP TEN?

In Norway Bergen, Trondheim and Oslo is the major cities that are worth to see. Else you're probably there for the nature since it's not much else here. It's a country thats 385,252 square km, but with 4,5 million inhabitants, and 1 million of them live on Oslo so you can see that most of the contry is sparcely populated.

Norfag reporting in.

http://www.turistveg.no/index.asp?lang=eng is a good site for info.

thanks so much guys, if after the plane ticket I'm left with little money, I'll just sleep in a tent in parks and live on bread and cream cheese.

inflation is higher in finland than in other european countries so don't come here, food and living are both fucking expensive atm. we're dealing with other economical problems too and a we're probably going to slip into a really bad recession soon. set sails for fail D:

go to sweden instead.

>>46088
well I'm not going to immigrate there, just see the sights, cycle along scenic roads and get to sweden if I'm going that way or gtfo of Scandinavia via plane from Helsinki.

Do ferries go as far as northern Germany from Finland or at least to Kopenhagen? how much do they cost? I could spend a few more days and finish my trip in Germany since Germany-Turkey plane tickets are 1/4 the price of Turkey-Anywhere in Scandinavia
>> Anonymous
I'm pretty sure there are ferries from Finland to Germany.
>> Anonymous
There is ferry connection between Rostock and Hanko, but its quite expensive and takes lot of time. I would suggest to take a plane from Germany (Airberlin) or from Poland if you can (Wizzair). It's cheaper and faster.

I think that Helsinki is quite nice city, but other finns might disagree (especially if they are not from Helsinki :D). My personal favourite however is Tampere. If I were you, I would probably go Helsinki- Hanko - Turku (and maybe some of the islands or Naantali) - Tampere - Vaasa. There isn't much to see in area north of that (before Lapland) and cities around there are not that interesting, so if you like countryside cycle up to Tornio or go Sweden by ferry from Vaasa.

You can save a lot if you have a tent and you camp in the bush (which is legal atleast in Finland and Sweden). Make your food with this or something like that and you save LOT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trangia.

A ferry trip from Helsinki to Rostock on a Tallink Silja Superfast ship costs 105€ without a cabin. The trip apparently lasts 25 hours.

thanks a lot anon, I'll have to camp in the bush

>>46159
105 euros? O_o quite a lot really. I'd rather cycle 25 hours and maybe a couple days more than spending that much on a shitty ferry.

Norway I must say is the most beautiful country in the world, And even if things are expensive because they struck oil its still a need to see location. Other things to check out is the northern lights, Göta canal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6ta_Canal (brilliant cycling route). I also suggest bringing a portable kitchen of some kind and a fishing rod. The Freedom to Roam apply to all the Scandinavian countries just obey the different laws i each country.

id recommend taking the boat between sweden and finland for your trip. its very far between the cities in northern finland/sweden.
wouldnt worry much about safety, except maybe for fast drivers on narrow roads.
prices in sweden finland are ok, but be prepared that norway is expensive.

Not OP, but does anyone know a good book for learning Norwegian (Bokmål, specifically) for English speakers. Not one of those stupid little travel books, but something to learn a decent amount of the language.

OP here, I just realized that Norway is looks pretty mountainous, like ALPS mountainous, may just ditch the whole Norway thing, since expensive too and etc. and just do this:

Land in Northern Germany via plane, take a train into Sweden or cycle.
Cycle to Stockholm, see the sights, party etc.
Cycle a little bit norther into Sweden
Ferry to Finland
Cycle around Finland, see Turku, Helsinki etc.
Either cycle all the way back to Germany for a cheap flight or bite the bullet and pay 600$ for a one way Helsinki-Istanbul

if I skip the sights on the way back, ditch some of my weight and etc, I could cycle 200 kilometers a day. so utilizing the cheaper ferry lines and whatnot, get to North Germany in what, 4,5-5 days? I guess returning from Helsinki would be economically more feasible.

it's spelled with a c, Copenhagen ffs, and dude why are you not considering Denmark, got the most weed in scandinavia, and lots of drinking and the only major city, which has a great scene for alternative music.
And we are not as bad as they say, we treat tourists really nice..

That sounds like an interesting plan, I'd love to do that, too. Assuming you've already done some calculating, how much do you reckon it's going to cost in total? Fellow countryman here, by the way.

people, mostly Finns and BBC :p filled me with the idea that Denmark is fail and AIDS and they hate it. racist people etc. I have no idea about any Danes and such and was just thinking about cycling through the country in one day staying for one night in Copenhagen before taking the ferry or whatever into Sweden. so Copenhagen is cool? what's the age of consent there? :D I AM a /b/tard after all.

I'm thinking about wrapping it up for 1500 euros, 13-14 days.

any of you guys wanna party along the way? we'd just generally fuck around when I'm in your town and when it's late I'd just go back to the camping site. willing to buy booze and pot if you're a loli. (for interpol's sake: I won't [lol I may, for a jb at least not a loli, ur sick man])
