How are you planning on getting from Beijing to Mongolia?
How good is your Mandarin?

Beijing is beautiful, safe, what urban life should be. The Square, of course, Zedong's body, Forbidden City. For 600RMB, charter a taxi for the day to take you to the Great Wall and Ming Tombs.

I don't know shit about Mongolia, other than they are assholes and they smoke a ton of ???

Good luck!

try to travel outside of Beijing, like to Tianjin or anywhere in Hebei province if you dont want to go to far.
Take a bus to the great wall, its much cheaper, beijing is the only place in china i was tried to be cheated on my taxi drivers (ie, take you the long way, just yell at them and get out without paying if they do that).

Ulan Bator is the single ugliest, least interesting city i've ever visited. The rest of the country more than makes up for it though, so if you can try to get out of the city.
