I'm a Canadian university student studying English with a minor in East Asian studies (broad term for culture, language, media, etc). If my marks stay strong I'm going to end up with a BA/BEd double degree. This entitles me to teach in Canada, but this is far from what I want to do.

I want to teach in Japan. A professor of mine taught in Japan for six years before returning and he shares his stories with me because he knows I plan to do the same.

It's still a ways away which is why I'm not worried about housing, transportation, etc. My courses on Japanese culture and media are shit because there's no examples of real life experiences. All of my practical information comes from a professor of mine.

Long story short: what are your experiences with Japan? Any insight?

ITT: Japan.

What is so fucking fascinating about Japan? Oh hey, let's go to a racist and mentally fucked up monocultural society that is hardly open to any other societies at all.

China has so so SO much more to offer, seriously.

If you like to party, tokyo and osaka are a fucking blast. People will buy you shit all the time, and any girl you approach will at least try to talk to you. the people are drunk and friendly in those cities at night. If you are a male then things will be easier also. All in all it is a fun place for a young guy, but you will notice some people's frustration with you being a foreigner.

Quick thread derail.

I'm a Korean American who's going to Japan with some friends in a couple weeks. I know there's a lot of animosity between Japan and Korea, so how would I be treated? What would they do if they found out I was Korean, and would it change their minds if they found out I was also American?

Current JET here. No one here gives two shits about a BEd. You won't be teaching university with anything less than an MA and the whole English teaching market in Japan is already way oversaturated. Understandable as Japan is a great country and one of the only developed countries that actually needs large numbers of English teachers.

In any case, with a BA qualifies you for Eikaiwa and JET. With a million people wanting to live in Japan at any cost, eikaiwa (private English schools) is becoming even more shit than before with bad hours, pay, benefits etc. JET (working at public junior high and high schools) is still a great cushy government job but acceptance numbers are now approaching only 15% of applicants. Good luck.
