ITT: worst flying experience

Clear air turbulence over Guam.
>> Anonymous
having two girls sitting in front that are afraid of flying that pray and scream all the time.

I love turbulence btw, like riding a roller coaster :D
just experienced once yet though, anytime the seatbelt sign is lit and they say "turbulence may occur" the plane shakes 1cm up and down, no fun :(

had some turb. flying out of hawaii, massive fucking drop with no seat-belt sign etc. had to have an emergency stop because some 13 year old slut had an anxiety attack and "couldn't breath".

Once I was flying in one of those boeing 737 with the really narrow engine.
When we were about to takeoff a bird flew into the engine and the takeoff was aborted. Very frightening, especially because I was young and had no fucking idea what was going on.

Every flight is simultaneously my worst & my best.
I always look upward towards the highest point in the sky, marvelling at the bluest skies, the most pale yellow sun, the beautiful clouds in their varying shades of gray.

On landing, I tilt back my head & face the sky. If you watched, you might mistake it for fear. Actually, it's because I'm longing for just one more fleeting second in the sky.

In spite of my hopeless romanticism regarding flight, I still find myself stretching out to meet Mother Earth in those final, blissful moments.

As flying becomes gliding becomes drifting, an infinitesimal instant of hovering becomes rolling, taxiing, a stop..

The overwhelming satisfaction is almost enough to forget these annoying humans riding inside of me.

Tenerife (complete shithole if you're ever thinking of going). The airport is next to the ocean and it gets crazy strong side winds.

We came in to land, touched the tarmac... then the grass and had to abort the landing. Second attempt didn't even make the tarmac, not even close... aborted. Third attempt and we touch the tarmac, then we don't, then we do, then we dont... they basically bounced the fucking plane down the runway until it was going slow enough for the wind not to get under it.

That was some scary shit! Made worse by the fact that there's a wreak of a crashed plane next to the runway (this was in 1999).

All together the worst fucking holiday I've ever been on. After Tenerife I swore that I'd never go on a package holiday again (I haven't).

Trans-atlantic flight to Europe. Mid-20s Muslim guy and little kid screaming and kicking RIGHT behind me for the entire trip.

God I was going to go nuts.

Journey back from New York to England, there was a thunderstorm going off. So terrifying.

I have two stories.

I had a "touch and go" arriving in SLC, wicked wind sheer. The pilot was unable to get the plane down until we were almost across the runway, so just as the gear touched, he bailed on it and jacked up the throttle, and we took off again... We went into a 45 minute holding pattern, then landed without anything interesting happening. He explained what was happening over the PA, so we were not too freaked out....Pucker factor: 6/10.

Another time, on approach to Vegas one summer afternoon, we had so much turbulence one time, about half the chicks on the flight were crying..Totally freaked out. When we landed, we hit so hard, I swear to god I thought the gear was going to give out and we were fucked. Pucker factor 8/10

I fly about 15-20 times a year, and these were the absolute worst ones.

Coming into Atlanta for a xfer to New Orleans for business. Our approach coming in for landing was normal and as I'm watching the ground get closer (something I like to do), just as we get right in front of where the runway starts, the engines rev way up and the nose tilts up even more. I was like ohh shit!! Then about two seconds later the whole plane does a hard right, I mean hard. I've been on 40 or 50 planes and this shit was like a 45 degree angle, and we were on like a 720 or 737 like 200 ft off the ground. The whole time the jets are just screaming at what sounds like full blast and we were going away from the airport. The plane leveled off after about 10 seconds, but we were still ascending then we took another (less severe) turn then leveled out again. After about another 2 minutes the captain came on and said that a private jet was coming right across the runway where we to land and that we would have hit it. You could tell he was pissed, he apologized and said he would file incident reports to get to the bottom of what happened. We circled around for another five minutes or so and landed and I got on my other plane to New Orleans and never heard anything else about it.

My worst experience was actually coming into land at Heathrow a few months ago and the drop in pressure gave me the most hellish pain in the sinuses. I thought my brain was going explode. I need to go to the doctor about this before I fly again.

A few years ago, on my way to Spain from Norway a woman with a snotty little kid sat infront of me.
He cried most of the flight, and when she held him and patted his back, he puked over me...

Missed flight in altanta had to pay full price for a new ticket cause it was an "international" flight which turned out to be $280.

NZ fag here. I was on one of the smaller Boeing 737's coming into Hamilton. Just as we landed the pilot hit the brakes. The whole plane was screeching, people were screaming, this went on for a good 15 seconds until we grinded to a halt. Turns out the Hamilton runway is so fucking short it isn't designed for large commercial flights.

I got a pretty nasty bruise on my hip from the seat belt though because it was twisted when hit.

I was coming home to Melbourne and the retired woman next to me was telling me about her trip in light aircraft around the Pacific rim. Started out in Canada, did a loop of the Caribbean, and then around the Pacific.
We hit a thunderstorm on approach to the airport. The pilot landed it OK but my fingernails were blue from her hanging onto my arm.
... and my Sweetie bought us a Dawn Flight over the city. Just as we took off the door popped open. I couldn't reach it without taking off the seatbelt. The pilots couldn't hear us because we were in the rear cabin. I hate heights.
Took three goes to close it.

On a plane from California to Missouri, I was sitting next to a first-time flyer who was this middle-aged woman. She was so doped up on meds and sleeping pills (that didn't put her to sleep, go figure.), and I got to hear about 2 hours of her rambling about her life story and how she can't feel anything right now.

You can tell shes a good woman at heart when she's sober, but jesus christ she wouldn't leave me alone and I wanted to punch her in the face. Longest flight ever

granted I've never had any epic turbulence encounters like some of you guys but I'm sure the worst is yet to come

not really a bad flying experience but you could count it as that.

flight from vienna to tokyo, narita.
we were boarding an airbus a340 in vienna, just when everyone was on the plane my mate and I noticed something... it smells here, it smells burnt and just in that moment came the pilot on the speakers "due to a technical problem blah blah blah" ... everyone out of the plane again.
so after a few hours they got a new plane for us, airbus a330, the flight then was basically just long and boring, then when approaching narita we were looking out the window, "oh look, japan" and the ground kept coming closer and closer, then just when I thought he'd touch the ground any second the engines roared to full power and he went up again, shortly after that pilot came on the speakers again "due to another plane not leaving the runway fast enough..." yeah... but I liked it, getting pressed in the seats again. :D
