So what are /trv/'s thoughts on dubai? I'm not necessarily planning to visit soon, but it certainly is an option for the future for me.
>> Anonymous
Holy crap. I knew Dubai was basically built out of a desert... but damn that is near exponential growth.

Why is the sky brighter in 2003?

Less sand and dust and shit blowing around because of all the buildings.
>> Anonymous
My guess is the sand changes the intensity of the photo, and is likely being kicked up into the air anyway.
>> Anonymous
Theres nothing to really say about it yet. The city has sprung up over night and therefore doesn't have a very rich history or reputation.

Yet.

Right now its becoming an architectural wonder. So much new stuff is being built there.

I'd Nuke it.

not a whole lot of tourist destinations, but lots of great shopping, some nice beaches, clubs, and the hotels are pretty great.

I would wait a few years to visit, since theyre expanding so much, but still worth checking out. basically like a middle eastern las vegas without gambling and more of a diverse selection of prostitutes
>> Anonymous
Is this shit even sustainable? I know it would be if shitloads of people were actually going there and they were raking in money like Vegas, but I never hear about it being some super hot tourist destination. I just see people watching from afar and going "o wow check out what's going on over there"

I always think the same thing, but there are too many investors(people who have money because they know what to do with it) for it to fail. The city either has the biggest and best [insert anything here] or is currently building the biggest and best. The fact that it is still a Muslim nation is very off-putting, knowing that you'll end up in jail if you accidentally pack some bacon into your luggage, but I plan to visit it within the next two years. Everything they are building there blows my mind.

The Dubai situation can be compared to blowing up a balloon. No matter how big it gets, it's still full of air. There's no real investment in it other than by the UAE government, and they're injecting money into it at a rediculous rate. After the novelty wears off, expect Dubai to become the most beautiful ghost town ever.

>>51900
actually non-muslims can bring in and eat pork all they want

>>51904
that analogy doesn't make any sense. there's plenty of outside investment. over half the population is expatriates. shit is going through the roof
>> Anonymous
>>51912

But all this crazy crap needs to make money for it to be sustainable, and I don't see a whole lot of tourism. I sense a bubble.
>> Anonymous
>>51912
You're right. I just did some Googling on the pork. I had heard otherwise. Very good to hear that they will be open to Westerners being Westerners.

Also, isn't over 60% of the population Indian/Foreign construction workers? 10% of the population actually being Dubai natives? Can you really consider them ex-pats? :P
>> Anonymous
Money laundering capital of world. Also, if your shady operation needs financing, this is the place to go. It's not going to run out of money anytime soon.

>>51916
Is correct. A mere 10% are natives. Non-natives can't stay more than 6 months at a time. They have to leave for a month then come back. Those that don't follow this rule are practically slaves. Jews can't enter at all.
>> Anonymous
>>51912
>over half the population is expatriates
So? Those are Indian/Pakistani workers who couldn't affort a Dubai Marina condo if they saved their whole lives. Migrant workers do not equal foreign investment. Almost all the big developers are Dubai based and many of the projects are funded by the government. You can't just build condos, attractions, and office buildings and expect them to be filled with tourists, residents, and businesses just like that. It's the opposite of how a city should be (and is) developed. Dubai is unnatural and untested city planning and it will either succeed spectacularly and become a city like no other, or it will much more likely fail horribly.

Beautiful city, but enjoy being imprisoned for having a poppy seed on your collar. Fuck Dubai.

ISRAELIS (which doesn't equal Jews) can't enter, and for good reason. Jews can enter as long as they don't have Israeli stamps on their passports.

OP, everyone in this thread is being a shithead. its a decent place, but not the best. its a developing country with plenty of problems (that ALL DEVELOPING COUNTRIES have), but wait a few decades and itll be worth somewhere to visit

its basically the next singapore, just maybe with less asians and more human rights violations

i think u will have to be rather wealthy to fully appreciate this city. and if you're planning to live there, i heard that racism is pretty rampant.

It's like Monaco but with sand niggers. Also, don't go unless you're a multimillionaire because all the fun shit is expensive.

Earlier this week, Keith Andrew Brown, 43, from Middlesex was imprisoned for four years after 0.003g cannabis was found in the tread of his shoe by Dubai customs officials. He was stopped in transit from Ethiopia to London last September.

The amount of the drug found on his shoe would not be visible to the naked eye and weighs less than a single grain of sugar.

Still fucked up though. When that place runs out of oil those people are going to be seriously fucked. But, at least they will have cool buildings.

i was there this past new year so i'll just give a few of my thoughts:

-if you're looking for an authentic middle-eastern cultural experience, you wont find it in dubai. it feels like disney world on steroids.

-you can only really have fun if you are willing/able to spend a lot of money.

-there's not much to do besides shopping at the mall, ski-dubai, driving around and seeing everything, the beach, or going on a desert safari. if you're not into that, then come back in a few years when dubai is more developed.

- if you have the money to stay at the madinat jumeirah or the jumeirah beach hotel, you'll love yourself for life.

-40% of the people you see will be western expats/tourists, the other 50% will be indians/phillipinos doing all the labor, and you may spot an emirati if you're lucky.

overall: dubai is really cool, but it's still just brand new (believe it or not). just be careful about arab culture and not getting b& for drugs

A bubble built by high oil prices.

lol @ ignoramuses that think Dubai was built on oil profits...

Dubai was built on smuggling, money laundering and luck. Not to mention the oil...but not really...

Dubai has a lot of fancy, pretty looking buildings, but they're all REALLY shitty. I visited almost a year ago. They have seriously NO building codes there. The walls are all super thin and crack easily. They even have exposed wall sockets all over the damn place. I'm pretty sure the entire floor of the hotel I was in was on a slant.

>>52361Dubai was built on smuggling, money laundering and luck. Not to mention the oil...but not really...

Yes. There was some oil money a while back but right now it's all about trade, trade finance, real estate speculation, and light industry supplied by low wage (read: slave) labor imported from Pakistan. Doesn't mean it's sustainable any more than oil wealth, but they're well ahead of the game compared to some neighboring countries.

Saying that Dubai is going to disappear when "all that oil dries up" is kind of like saying that Hong Kong is going to disappear when all that opium money dries up.

And now, you may return to driving your humvees and bitching about the price of oil.
