So I want to get a handheld GPS unit, mostly as part of an "emergency kit" (paranoid, etc), but also just for fun while camping and stuff.

I live in Southern California, so don't really have to worry about dense tree cover, but I like to plan for all things.

Is a High Sensitivity Receiver a necessity, or just faster in acquisition?

Picture is the ETrex Legend, about $140 bucks, lots of maps and storage space, but no HighSens Rec.

My other option is the Etrex H ($90) that is a lower end model, fewer maps, no additional space, but it has a HighSens Rec.

Thoughts?

If you want a cheap, simple, effective GPS, the any of the etrex models are fine. However...

There is no reason to get a GPS as part of an "emergency kit." You would be much better served getting some decent maps, a good compass, and lots of training in how to use them. All a GPS really does is tell you where you are, and the maps are generally quite poor and/or difficult to use due to the small screen. Add that to the fact that it's dependent on batteries and you have a pretty poor tool for emergency situations. Basic land navigation skills (which means being really competent at it, not just knowing that a compass points northish) will get you through a whole lot more and will still serve you if your GPS batteries die or your map or compass get destroyed.

Yeah, I already have a map and compass, but I like gadgets and a GPS wouldn't hurt to have around.

a high sensitivity receiver isn't necessary, it just copes better in places with a lot of tall buildings around

GPS is great for an emergency kit because it's almost impossible to become fuckall lost
