Hi /trv/

I am planning a trip to Tokyo next year, and I am looking for a hostel/cheap hotel. I can't really afford some fancy hotel, and as little time as I will be there, it seems like a waste. Anyone have any suggestions as to which hostel is best. Right now, I am eyeing Hotel New Azuma. Seems good enough and is near convenience stores.

sakura hotel in jimbocho.
paid about $50ish a night for a bed, a room and a shared shower.

Great, english speaking staff and 2 minute walk from the jimbocho subway station.... i wanna go back... ; -;.

Some Anon told me about the Tokyo Green Hotel in Ochanomizu (between Akihabara and Shibuya).

Single rooms start at about $80 a night. But with a private bath, a clean room in a good location, it seems like a safe bet.

I'm going to that exact hostel in OP's post on Saturday.

I really liked it there, it was in a western-style renovated house. Private room with a futon and air con, coin shower. You might be out a bit more for train fares if money is tight, but the neighborhood has a cool, sort of slummy vibe to it. I had beer and yakitori from a street-front store with some construction workers last summer, good times.

Also, it's within walking distance to Asakusa shrine. As some trivia, parts of 'Ashita no Joe' were set in this neighborhood (I almost shat bricks when I saw this bridge and had a quick 'no way' flash, than checked it later)

And to think I wasn't going to mention it. Never give benefit of doubt on 4chan I guess.

If you take the (expensive) Tsukuba subway, it's 8 mins and 240 yen.

Take the Hibiya line, it's usually 10mins and only 160 yen. It's more crowded but if you want open spaces...

Thanks for the info, I'm not on a very tight budget so I shall have to see which option is more benri (thats' japanese and means convenient ^_^)

actualy I'm not all that weaboo on the outside and I'll be traveling with friends so I shall have to limit my freaking out at seeing that limited edition H-figurine that I always wanted.

Just take the Hibiya. The Tsukuba is cool but not worth it cool.

What's anon's experience with Youth Hostels in Tokyo?

Before someone mentions it, I don't care about curfews.
>> Anonymous
>>15246
Clean and quiet and safe, until the 'Tokyo cool guy' types (always foreigners) begin to gather and create an asshole resonance field of self-generate importance that shields them from having social manners. Then it's all loud conversations about allegedly banging chicks in youth hostels.

tl;dr, usually quite good, sometimes challenging a decent mid-rnage business hotel.

Chuck your backpack into a locker at JR station - 400y/day, sleep on rooftops.

Steal bentos in konbini, walk to other konbini and ask them to heat it up for you.

All been done. All supereasy except for the rooftop sleeping part, gotta be careful when choosing.

Stayed in one in Nagoya, it wasn't bad, the rooms smelled a bit but you got over it.

If you're not a total poorfag, but only a sort-of-budget-minded fag, I'd recommend the Otsuka Station Hotel near Otsuka Station (O RLY?!) on the Yamanote line. Also close to the Scientology Church. 4500-5000/night. If you're in it for a longer haul, you'd best look at places like weekly mansions.

This thread is now about bumming it in Japan - /trv/, I'm familiar with cheating on regular trains, but is there any other way to cheat on shinkansen other than the regular one with 2 station sightseeing tickets + a friend on the other side?

>>15349

rooftops?
>> Anonymous
>>16388
Get on a shinkansen. Take a random seat. Change stations often - get on another one.. Play the nihongo wakaranai retardation scheme. Pretend to not understand when a Japanese couple holding tickets comes to your seat with a confused gaze.
>> Anonymous
>>16396
stay in the unreserved seating cars -- you won't have the problem of sitting in someone's seat, and since shink tickets are checked by the machine at the gate, and not by conductors, you won't have anything to worry about in that sense

I traveled for 1 week, and slept in internet cafes. Around Y3000~4000 a night, and some have shower for free... and of course, the drink bar.
They're not the most confortable place in the world, but you can abuse their awesome internet and rest a bit.

There was one, Media Center Popeye or something among those lines... free shower, awesome drink bar, and microwave.
I went there during lunch... bring a bento, heat it up, drink a lot of stuff during 30min, for Y300~400...

Well what I'm worried about is how well would the baka gaijin nihongo wakaranai trick fly when it comes to shinkansen gates - from what I've seen they're much stricter there than on the regular gates..
>> Anonymous
>>16401
Uh, conductors do pass and check the tickets in the train, but they almost never bother whities, especially if you pretend to sleep. They pass after every stop so it's best to take the one with least stops (nozomi I think) imo.
>> Anonymous
>>16444
uh, never on shinks in my experience, in the unreserved cars. you can't enter the shink platform without swiping your tickets in the machine. (they check all the time on limited expresses) in reserved and green car cars, they check, but i've never been checked in unreserved on the shink.
if you can somehow get by the gates, just stand in the end section (this works on any train). getting out of the station, just be like "i came from that station just down the way", and maybe pay local fare.
>> Anonymous
>>16448
Yeah, that's what I do with local trains - I lost a ticket, came from the previous station etc, but I never did it at the shinkansen gates and I'm wondering if something worse than "ok pls pay the fare from the last stop" might happen.. You pulled the shinkansen cheat before? Also, how do you enter the shinkansen area? You can buy that station sightseeing ticket but I think they are sold only at major stations and if you want to board at a smaller station you couldn't get them?

What exactly do you mean by 'if you can somehow get by the gates, just stand in the end section (this works on any train).'?
>> Anonymous
15349 here
What are you guys' favorite ways of getting out of stations/through the ticket gates? At larger stations it's easy to walk through the gate behind a jap and hold your bag/backpack between you so it doesn't trip the gate, but at smaller stations it's hard to pull off. However smaller stations have good sides too, usually they're not fenced too much and you can just jump off the platform and walk away.

My favorites:
-JR Akihabara, not the electric town exit but the other one: pressed the 'call attendant' button on the ticket vending machine, attendant came over from inside to ask what's the problem and while she was away (she was alone) from the desk I just passed through the double glass doors.
-Any station: just walk up to the gate attendant's desk, smile, give him your hand for a shake which will confuse him and trip his 'zomg must act as a westerner' reflexes, then when he/she grabs your hand say 'shacho kondo gomenne' and pass through, leaves them laughing every time.
-Approach the gate booth while the attendant is away for a few secs (on a phone or whatever), rotate yourself so as to look like you came from inside and say that you got lost/ask if this is some random station etc, then when they answer say thanks, turn around and go inside.

>>16461
Lol sry these are my favs for getting in, not out.
>> Anonymous
>>16461
Except for the second one with the handshake, it works best for getting out.
>> Anonymous
Best getting-out was at some shitstation on yokohama soutetsu line, I already bullshitted the attendant for so many times and was very embarassed since it was always the same guy; then I realized that at the end of the platform there's an unlocked door in the fence with stairs to the ground level behind it, walk for a few meters then and you're on the street.
>> Anonymous
What about the food, fellow anons? You can steal bentos at konbinis (dont forget to grab some beer), you can go to a cheapass chain such as saizeriya and walk out while they're not paying attention (best when a large group is paying their bill), you can grab groceries that get delivered to restaurants in the morning and left in front of the doors, completely unattended. For the last one, you need to invest in those portable gas cookers but they can be had cheaply (even for free, if you find one in garbage or on freecycle etc) and the gas is cheap - 1 tank is cca 100 yen iirc? Or was it 3 for 100 in 100 yen shops..

If it's not yours, don't take it. You can live cheap in Japan on a shoestring budget, but you'll have to skip some of the luxuries. Pre-packaged bent? being one of them.

>>16499
Seconded. If you want to live in a society where you can't leave something on the side walk for more than ten minutes, go live in some other place. Go live in Amsterdam or Los Angeles.
>> Anonymous
>>16458
like, on the shink and limited expresses, there's little sections when you first enter the train, then you go through another door to the seating area. if you stand in these end sections for the entire duration of your trip, they won't check your ticket. works best it's busy, but seems to work all the time. for limited express, you can get to the platform just by buying the cheapest ticket (or at smaller stations, just walking in). for shinks though, once you're inside the station, you need to go through ANOTHER turnstile to get tot he shink tracks, which is an automatic machine you put your shink tickets in. makes it harder to pull that scam.

Most the real weeaboos come and vacation for a week or so to shop at akiba or whatever and the stereotype doesn't really affect them. The people it pisses off most are those there for the long term, especially professionals like investment bankers, translators, etc.

>>17053here, don't be such a drama queen over this, most of this shit is minor and goes unnoticed.. where it's gonna suck is when some jap rapes/kills some girl and then they find your fingerprints there. You really think they're going to bother for a 400yen bento?

>> Anonymous
>>17282
It's not a justification at all, I'm just saying it's stupid to worry about getting accused for a bento theft through left fingerprints when it's far more likely that will happen with a lot worse crime such as rape.

As for making it tough for you, I hope you'll realize one day that you aren't a Jap, no matter how much you want to be one, and that being the equivalent of a Jew wanting to be a Nazi in Naziland is the only thing that's making it hard for you, not some dumb faggot that steals a bento once in a few months when he gets drunk in Kabukicho.

>>Side note: I have no qualms with turning any of you in if I do see you do that shit lol.

You won't see me do that shit. Because you're a scrawny weeaboo faggot working as a fake english teacher and when you do go out to Roppongi to try to pickup ugly, AIDS-ridden japsluts in Gaspanic because your students don't respond to your attempts you're not a mr toughguy loudmouth anymore. And that's IF you go out and not wank to your gravure cds which is far more likely judging by your frustration level.

Sidenote: I'm a japanese citizen (half-japanese but it doesnt show) and don't get fingerprinted, enjoy getting caught for shit I stole. Wow, I never thought I'll see a day when a weeaboo will tell me to GTFO his Japan. Gotta love dem internetz.

I know, and that's exactly the point. I had to live there for 19 years, being treated not as half-Japanese, but as half-Human (from their point it's the same thing, but many weeaboos don't seem to understand it). I left Japan and am happy where I am now, and when I visit family and friends in Japan I tend to be an asshole when going out, not towards individuals but towards the system, abusing it. That same system was an asshole to me for 19 years and that's why I don't feel bad about it.
