Hey /trv/, I'm considering being a hobo around the world since life sucks and I have nothing better to do. This means I'm doing the stowaway thing and camping outside a lot.

I've got a huge list of essentials here, but any dangers in particular I should be prepared for? I've got most medical things covered including emergency rations if I can't find food.

I found the pic on Google search and thought it fit well.

sounds like a good way to get raped and stabbed

Already covered.

Oh yeah? What you get?

You don't have to be a penniless hobo, if you're smart you'd work to get your hands on a property or (if you've already got one) simply rent it out and use that rent to travel around the world. Most people pay somewhere in the hundreds a month to rent out a property, and you CAN live on a dollar a day.

That's my life-plan.

holy crap 4chan has a travel board.

Concealed carry, easy-to-access combat knife, and a retractable steel baton, all of which have an additional purpose besides as a weapon. A number of other items such as a cut-throat razor could also be intended for use as a weapon but that is not their main purpose. I considered a taser but decided against it.

>>34218
That's actually some sound advice, thanks.
>> Anonymous
>>34268
I assume your American and by "around the world" you just mean America. Because it would be a trifle hard to sneak a steel baton and a combat knife across the borders.
>> Anonymous
>>34277
I am American, and by around the world I do mean around the world. As in a complete circle through Europe, Africa, and Asia. I have no interest in latin countries or up north because I'm aware of complications with border-crossing.

>I have no interest in latin countries or up north because I'm aware of complications with border-crossing.
lolwut? And you think Africa is easier? The fucking Middle East?

Ignorance. Another reason /trv/ is shit.

>>34281
Dude, you can sneak a fucking bazooka into Africa. Whole continent has shit security.
>> Anonymous
>>34277
>hard to sneak a steel baton
Are you serious? You point out the baton but not the gun, which would be considerably harder to get away with.
>> Anonymous
>>34284
its not security you have to worry about

>>34293
What gun? He has a knife and a baton.

means of purifying water=must, and a journal so you can record notes necissary for a book you can get published afterwards.

>>34319
I've got iodine tablets down. Would I need anything else for purifying water?

>>34281
If I were to successfully cross the border I would undoubtedly have to go through some remote part of Montana to get into Canada, which isn't that big of a deal, but then I'd have to cross all the way over onto either side to get to the shoreline for a ship to hop onto. Mexico is totally out of the picture because that's just too much shit to go through considering the amount of guards they set up for illegal immigrant prevention. If I were to go down there I would take a boat through the gulf.

>>34284
dude, you could sneak a few fucking tanks into Africa with the shitty security there.

>>34188

OP, hoboing around the world sounds like a romantic idea but like>>34189
said, its a sure way to get raped, stabbed and eaten (in that order, if you're lucky). Not to forget to mention kidnapping for slavery or just so they can sell your body parts to the highest bidder.

But if you insist on doing it, i'd suggest you learn all the essential survival guide. Environment differs across the continent and even each are have their own dangers. There are others who have done it and succeeded. (by succeeding i meant they're found alive and not in some shallow grave)

(PS) essentials you should know :- hunting, scavaging, foraging, first aid, herbalism, map-reading, sign-language, local dialects, self-defence, street begging, rape trauma recovery, international passports, labor skills and maybe God's love. Good luck.
>> Anonymous
OP, are you male or female. b/c if you're female, then you are pretty fuckin stupid and humanity can do without someone as retarded as you.
>> Anonymous
>>34331
op what's so difficult about obtaining a passport to go to mexico? You're american right? Americans backpack there all the time. Why would you intentionally go illegally unless you're some fugitive.
>> Anonymous
>>34576
>fugitive

Do you understand what being a hobo is? They stowaway and illegally sneak across borders because they can't afford airfare and all that crap.

bleach is better. You cannot use iodine for extended periods of time; something about the thyroid.
>> Anonymous
OP, I hope you're not an indie kid who listened to too much college rock one day and then thought it would be totally 'nonconformist' to become a european hobo.

>> Anonymous
>>34500
I'm a woman and did something very similar. If you know how to play it smart, you can pull it over without ever having to suck one cock for money.

Only other women I ever knew who attempted this had a pretty awful experience, and for that matter so do most men. If you are a women (particularly of the ZERO PIGMENT blonde catagory, as I am) don't flaunt it.

Stay clean, don't discuss your journey, and these days I might recommend a cell phone. If you were inspired to do this by a song (especially if you're the type who actually paid money for the CD), STOP NOW AND RECONSIDER.

Man or woman, you're going to have a dreadful time if you don't fully realize what you're getting yourself into. And lol @ the baton. This isn't Advent Children you fucking douche. Knife will suffice in a pinch though if it comes down to using that, you might be all sorts of fucked.

and getting a passport to cross the border is just to ridiculous or something?

No you didn't.

Have fun on your street corner.

OP here.

I was looking for additional advice on things related to first-aid and outdoor survival. Perhaps because it was my failure to actually explain what the fuck I'm doing that led to the topic not going the way I intended.

First of all, while I'm hoboing because I want to, I'm also hoboing because that is the most efficient and cheapest way of getting to my destinations. There are three primary destinations in particular: Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Yes, I'm aware that this will take a few years to accomplish on what for the most part will be foot. So, I'll ask more specific questions for advice:

(1) With those locations in mind (let's assume in order, depends which direction I'll be going), what major towns and cities would be good checkpoints along that route to restock supplies and for extended periods of rest? This really only applies to folks who have been anywhere near there.

(2) What environmental concerns should I be on the lookout for? Basically, I need to know what I should be on the lookout for as far as weather, terrain obstacles, snakes and other dangerous animals, etc. throughout the route. I think I've got most things covered but one of my biggest concerns is the inability to readily find antivenom to hold onto in case of an emergency. It only lasts for so long. Any first-aid tips on minor injuries such as a cut, animal sting/bite, or broken finger?

(cont.)

(3) To elaborate on some questions about previous equipment, the retractable baton is a recent addition. I originally had a crowbar written down, and decided that a crowbar would be too big and far too suspicious, when a solid retractable baton is just as suitable for opening most obstacles where a crowbar would come in handy all the same. A machete was always considered to destroy brush and double as a weapon, but in order to draw away suspicion and lighten the load, I will acquire a machete at a further date in my trip. In the mean time, the knife and baton will work fine.

Someone earlier mentioned iodine toxicity, and I am aware that such an issue may arise. I have considered additional options such as retail tablets for purification and the recommendation for bleach. Boiling, of course, is also an option.

(4) Herbalism tips. Does anyone have any? I've been studying botany but I'm sure someone out there could help me out since my knowledge is very basic.

(5) Sanitation and hygiene tips? I'm going to take my shits in the bushes and wipe my ass with leaves, but depending on where I'm at I may not have access to readily available ass-leaves. Any recommendations for related materials to bring along?

One more thing, I'm trying to keep my load in the area of a maximum 50 to 70 pounds.

>>34793
more like the OP will never even try to do this. they will kick around the idea of doing it for a few months, tell people they're going to do it, maybe buy some lonely planet guides, then either not do it at all and make up an excuse why, or the OP will go try to do it, fail, and go home

> Eastern Europe,

is okay, but

>the Middle East, and Central Asia

may be hard for a female. I cannot recommend
going there without a male partner.

(I assume you want to hitch-hike.)

Do not forget to bring sleeping equipment,
and try to set it outside towns.

Wipe arse with water.

>>34793here again.

Avoid the middle east regardless of gender. The entire place sucks a dick. Egypt is a stunning place to visit but holy shit, that general area of the planet is just stinky hairy people. Everything of value has been destroyed by the animals that inhabit that shithole.

OP here. Since everyone seems to think I'm female for some reason, I'll point out that I am not.

>>34821
You're right. I might never do it. That doesn't change the fact that I plan to, though. I've still got plenty of time for preparation.

>>34825
Wiping my ass with water? Like spraying my asshole with a garden hose? Plausible, but what about in areas where water is scarce and/or filthy?

Also, I'm not hitchhiking. I'm walking. If possible I might steal a bicycle or other easy-to-jack vehicle, as well as hopping on and off trains.

>>34840
>Plausible, but what about in areas where water is scarce and/or filthy?
I'll go out on a limb here and say it's less filthy than your shitty ass.
>> Anonymous
>>34841
By filthy I mean riddled with disease-carrying shit that will be a sure way to get hepatitis or something.
>> Anonymous
you can try getting yourself a book on herbalism if it can help. But seriously, even if you are a male, it doesnt mean you're still safer than females. There are sick fucks out there who would rape the moment they find a fresh wet hole.

>>34840
jacking off vehicles is not a good idea even if its just a bicycle. In some countries, they chop off hands for stealing while in others countries they would just mob around you and beat you to a pulp.

But if you insist on doing it. Let me give you some free advice. Travel in Groups and avoid conflicted areas. Get yourself a Lonely Planet travel guide. It might help.

PS make an effort to learn the basic local language. it may save your life.
