>>2674Be a traveler or a student, not a tourist. Respect the culture and have fun. Thats my rule for going anywhere.
Two Maikosan at Gion Corner Theater.
>>2674Learn to sprechen sie Nihongo. You get treated much better, since people will not be horrifically frightened they'll have to fall back on their High School English to communicate with you.
This was a funny Kyogen called Bo Shibari (Tied to a Staff)...
Plenty of upscale stores to blow money in Kyoto....Giant crab moves btw
Summer in Japan is hot and humid and no one uses air conditioning, it sucks. So the Japanese make it by constantly throwing festivals, drinking and eating. The following are from the Tanabata festival in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa where i spent most of my time.
These taiko drummers just rocked their ass's off it was an honor to go up and talk to them. They let me hit the drums <3 <3 <3
After a long day of walking and partying. I liked this view for some reason. I have more in between pics but they are mostly just like>>2762and>>2766
Awesome pictures. Where these areas made for tourists?
>>2806I was there as a student at the time and was introduced to many contacts, there was no way I would be able to just walk into a teahouse in Gion. There are no laws prohibiting tourists from going anywhere but if your going to be a "tourist" outside of Tokyo its best to be with someone who knows whats going on. My experiences with tourists have been mostly negative for the most part. They have no idea whats going on, they are usually lost and upset because or culture differences, language barriers. I mean if your going to go take several months to research what you want to do and to learn some of the language and culture.Pic is on the Kanagawa University campus.
IB the weaboos get jealous
I was there for a week and it sucked balls. All the women are ugly as sin and the food made me which i was back home
>>2857I loved the food, but again i love seafood.YES, the majority of the women are ugly, but same as in any other country. All the good looking ones are taking but im married so i dont really care. Also where did you go?
i'd go to japan just because the internet is fast there.everything else you can get here in amerikkka.
>>2868The internet is faster everywhere else but America. China will have the fastest coming up for the Olympics, after that Korea, then somewhere else in Europe.
>>2868Good luck finding decent ??
Bus to the studio ghibli museum.
>>2874that thing looks like shit.i can cook for myself just fine, exotic food is a waste of money.
>>2904I don't know whether to say "Colossus?" or "YOU ARE NOT A GUN"
>>2898?exotic food is a waste of moneyBest not bother travelling, then, anonymous. Food is one of the best things about going to foreign countries, at least for me.pic related
Found some old pics as well. Here's some places to see that are off the tourist map.First up: love hotel.
>>2685Kobe is beautiful. I was there two weeks ago.
>>2917This one had a Fist of the North Star slot machine in it for some reason. lol.
Anything of Shibuya?
>>2922"fashion shopping"
>>2924from that starbucks you always see filmed in the movies
in tokyo drift, where's the the area during that scene where it slo-mos through a crowd of people? is that shibuya from the pic above?
>>2924It was raining... :(
>>2924Just a dumb one - bar called CLAP
>>2934Pretty nice, I've got some shots like this.
from the house of a sake brewer owner. house is right next to the brewery
>>2924Walking through Shibuya is weird. Its like walking through different sound zones. Thats the only way i can describe it.
>>2938A better one. I don't like Shibuya much. I prefer Shinjuku.
More Shibuya....
>>2927"Joyful Box"
Busiest street on earth...
>>2940I stayed in an olde-timey house when I was living in Mito. Used to be a friend's grandfather's place.Really spooky at night.
>>2973Harajuku sucks these days. It's all cosplaying Europeans and Nigerians. But I had friends from Australia visiting, so I took them there. Still have the best crepes in Japan though...
>>2912exotic foods aren't worth it to me.i'm chinese/vietnamese and i eat weird shit all the time so i guess that's probably why.maybe you white folk love eating weird stuff, but it's everyday for most people.
Jesus christ someone kill me.
>>2973Namba in Osaka always seemed busier than Harajuku to me.
some of the places i stayed...i love the smell of tatami
>>2981I concur. Namba is insane.
Is this the serious Japan visit thread?
How long did you go for, how much $ did the trip cost?
This was a ryokan in Kyoto i stayed for a while before the semester started.
>>3000Been here since January last year.Staying at understanding ladies' places = free rent.I periodically pick up some work to keep my work visa renewed and provide drinking money. But if you're renting here, it can be pretty expensive.
>>3008how'd you get hooked up with the free room?
>>3020I helped a lady who I met in a bar in Australia. She was in Sydney for three months studying at a business there, and didn;t speak any English. So I helped her with a few everyday things. She knew I was planning to quit my job and work in Japan, so she offered me a room at her place.
>>3005ULTIMATE JAPANESE!Any good?
How English-friendly is Japan? I noticed a lot of English signs and businesses. Is it just in the cities?
>>3022i wish i could get cool oppurtunities like that, but i never go out and if i did i would probably get shot or stabbed since i live in the shitty parts of LA.
The beer village!!>>3000I studied abroad for the summer and it was paid for by my school. I went for language and culture. I stayed an additional two months because my host family asked me. It rocked.
>>3028>>it was paid for by my schoolare you fucking kidding me?
>>3028i wish i got to be a weeaboo for free.
>>3023The living Language books teach all their languages phonetically which can be nice... The way I learned way from the written language. Reading it tho gave me an advantage in my vocabulary and pronunciation compared to those who went in w/o anything, but the best way to learn any language is abroad. Three months there i can talk my way around town and read basic signs.
>>3028No way dude. My school estimates I'll ran you 7G's, give or take. No government institution will loan you that kind of coin either.
>>3034>>3037LOL NOT FREE. I have a competitive GPA and payed for that. Not to mention almost every college offers grants for studying abroad.Day one of learning...
>>3043well, after reading>it was paid for by my schoolone would assume that it was fully paid for by your school.
>>3041Wow wtf are you talking about. yes 7g is an appropriate figure. The courses were worth 6 credits. But a normal semester for me runs 15grand and all my tuition is paid with loans. Government ones and private. Do you even pay for college or do your parents handle all that?!
This is great.
>>3046omg yes. it was all paid for by a grant that my University offers for students to study abroad. Its competitive but not many people study abroad here. I had to pay almost no out of pocket expenses. Other than beer, fun, Tokyo Disney, ectUnderstand. Google grand for studying abroad there are lots....
Anyone who has English as a native speaker can come to Japan and work. Sick of your crappy job? Come get an equally crappy one, but in Japan! After a year, if you try, you'll be better at Moon language than even the most hardworking weeaboo studying it outside of Japan in the same amount of time.
>>3056what if i have 0 knowledge of moon?what kind of crappy jobs are available there?i'm not leaving here just to work at a mc donald's in japan.
>>3043I did that shit in 8th grade eons ago. I dropped the class because the teacher was a bitch.
>>3056My wife and I will be going to teach in June'09I have many friends who teach over there now. Its not great work but they pay for most housing, transportation, food stipend, and it pays 30~35k a year.Ok back to pics of my travels...
>>3066>30~35k a yearis that in \ or $?
>>3069Google?! do you use it...
so when are all the /trv/ threads going to be ZOMG JAPAN IS TEH BEST LET ME TELL YOU WHY??As an aside to the OP, I enjoy Japan as well and hope to see you when I go back
>>2644
japan is fail everything from there is fail. People who go there are made of fail. I have to go back in 3 weeks
Well im done for the night. I honestly dont understand all this Japan hate stuff. I just happened to study abroad there cuz no one i knew had or was going there. I didnt go for anime, or robots. I found it to be a rich experience of beauty, history, and fun. Still I cant wait to got to Europe or China.
>>3043You've got really good handwriting! After 2.5 years of studying mine still looks like crap.
>>3062ANSWER MY QUESTION UNAGI_INU!
>>3008I was paying 35000yen per month in Tokyo for a room in a house with Internet/Bathroom/Kitchen etc.Found it reasonably cheap compared to hotels.
>>3176Sorry!I was in /jp/ before it went to shit with all that fucking touhou crap.Knowledge of Moon is not needed."teaching" is basically you sitting an chatting with people.Money is not good, but you get to live here and I guess that's what you want, right?
>>3178but how do i chat with people if i don't understand the native language?>I was in /jp/ before it went to shit with all that fucking touhou crap.at least /a/ might stop sucking, maybe.
>>3056Here's a copypasta of a reply from a thread earlier.>You must have no idea how scarce translation jobs are that aren't case by case ones or freelance ones. The ones you might be talking about are the ones that also need indepth knowledge in something technical like manual translation with software or hardware merchandise, which the company may need background experience in.>Destruction of NOVA left some near 2000 (Well, probably closer to 1500) english teachers unemployed and looking for jobs, so yes, the market for that is pretty saturated and many of them HAVE attempted to look for jobs other than teaching like translation and tutoring. Some of them have also reported to have gone home in their blogs.>I'd pick South Korea if I were you if you have a grasp of that knowledge and really do have a passion for teaching. The pay there is also higher than Taiwan's. A ton of JETfags I've met before that went to Japan were just freshly-graduated college kids that were in it as a temporary gig or were your typical hardcore otaku.
>>3182and also: if i do happen to have an interest in doing this, where the fuck do i start?
>>3187Also to add:Working visa's can be a hassle to get/manage and if you do get caught teaching English without one you will be deported and banned(disallowed) from entering Japan for a while.
>Anyone who has English as a native speaker can come to Japan and work. Sick of your crappy job? Come get an equally crappy one, but in Japan!I kinda doubt that.. Don't you need a fucking BA to even teach English over there
>>3196in most cases. I think a few places don't require BAs, but they're aimed more at children. Places like Peppy, and so on.
>>2973YOu've never been to sukuramburu-kousaten in Tokyo, then
>>3041Through scholarships I got about $20G to study for a year in Japan
>>3196Nope. JET program for teaching english only requires a college degree, no specific fieldI taught English as a private tutor in japan for a semester and didn't have to show proof of any degree whatsoever, just that I was a native english speaker (employer could tell)
>>3208You need a bachelor's degree.
OH LAWD! I'M GUNNA CONTRIBUTE!Took about 500 pictures in a 2 week period. There's about 15 max that i think were decent.THESE ARE THOSE!
Stayed overnight in Narita when my plane from Japan to Korea was cancelled. Took a few shots at the Radisson and the bus ride to and from the airport. Also got a picture of Fuji on the way to Korea.
Maikosan Katsufumi, the same maiko, I might note, as the first Maiko appearing in this thread. The third photo with the two Maiko, the one in dark blue is Yukako, the one in light blue is Koyuki, who, sadly, quit as Maikosan.
