Reasons why SOCCER isn't popular in the US:
I.The travesty that was the 2002 World Cup
1.We watched Germany win after a defender kept the ball out the goal with a handball
2.The BLATANT hometown officiating for south Korea

II.The game itself
1. The offsides rule fucking sucks
2. No stoppages and no chance for advertisements
3. DIVING(the players look like complete pussies)

III. We sucked in 2006

a) WTF does U.S. have to do with South Korea? Other than our army being stationed there, I mean.

b) NO STOPPAGES?! Americans are kings of tv-timeouts, WTF are you on about.

c) Americans suck every year. But we'll kick your ass at basketball.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
Are you fucking retarded?
>a) WTF does U.S. have to do with South Korea? Other than our army being stationed there, I mean.

The 2002 World Cup was in South Korea and Japan. I tried to make my post in an outline format so you would understand the subpoints for each main issue. Apparently I failed.

We advanced extremely far in 2002 and were ultimately eliminated after Germany kept the equalizer out of goal with a handball that wasn't called.

>b) NO STOPPAGES?! Americans are kings of tv-timeouts, WTF are you on about.

There are no TV timeouts in soccer which is one of the reasons it isn't popular.

>c) Americans suck every year. But we'll kick your ass at basketball.

We didn't suck in 2002 and were eliminated by shit international referees. Not a good way to gain a following for a fledgling sport.
>> Anonymous
>We didn't suck in 2002 and were eliminated by shit international referees. Not a good way to gain a following for a fledgling sport.

That would imply had we won, the U.S. team would gain an international following. I think we'd like a following here at home, first, thankyouverymuch.

There was quite a buzz in 2002. We advanced as far as the country ever had(except for the year we won the World Cup).

Bloody hell, I know it's a bitch to get right, that's why I'm advocating increased use of electronics to guide officials.
But the offside rule really is a must-have rule, unless you want 3 players camping in front of the opposition goal waiting for a hopeful punt from the other side and/or defenders too busy with them to participate in the game.

>The 1994 World Cup holds the record for the highest attendance in World Cup history.
>It was also the highest-attended single sport sporting event in United States history.
>The finals were also the first time that players had their names printed in the back of their jerseys in a World Cup, just like other American sports did. This custom followed from Euro 92, and has followed ever since.
>The finals were the first to award 3 points for a win in the group stage to motivate teams to play an attacking style.
>The 1994 World Cup revolutionized television coverage of sports in the USA through the sponsored scoreboard and game clock that were constantly shown on screen throughout the game. Television sports coverage in the US had long been dependent upon commercial breaks; a feature suitable for sports such as baseball, basketball, ice hockey and American football (which all have breaks in the action), but long considered incompatible with soccer, due to the long stretches of uninterrupted play. Variations on it were quickly incorporated into virtually every team sports broadcast by the decade's end.

America has done the best job at hosting the World Cup ever, even though it's not THAT popular of a sport here.

Soccer isn't popular in the US because the best players and leagues don't play here.

I don't think the lack of TV timeouts is a direct reason for a lack of popularity among fans. You could argue that it's a reason that TV networks don't make as much money relative to other sports and therefore aren't as keen to get it out on the air where people could watch and /become/ fans through exposure to it etc etc, and therefore the lack of TV timeouts is an opportunity cost instead of a direct negative.

But the implication that people aren't fans of the game because it doesn't have TV timeouts is a little weird.
>> Anonymous
>argentina buys peru for 3 tons of corn in 1978

Argentinian regime bought the whole WC back then, they thought a Cup win would ensure less unrest among the population.
Threatened the ref (who wasn't even the FIFA-appointed ref, the Argies wanted someone more favorable, so they got Gonella instead of Klein) in the final to back the home side, or else...

We don't have time to watch two hours of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENING that ends 0-0. Get rid of the fucking "offsides" bullshit and put a time limit on how long an opposing player can stay in the goal box if the ball isn't on that side of the field.

Even with that goal given Germany would still have gone on to take it i think. And yeah, it sucks but those things are part of the game, everyone gets their share of questionable calls, some hurt and some help. That kind of handball, in the middle of a crowd and when your arm is pretty much up against the body is insanely hard to catch for the ref, and unless we want to introduce some retarded "challenge" system (which we decidedly DO NOT WANT) it's just something we have to live with.

this thread is tl;dr and it's possible somebody has said this already ITT.

Essentially the only reason Soccer is fail in the US is because the landscape is too crowded already.

The big 3 (Football Baseball Basketball) have so much of the fringe market share that casual viewership is hard to come by, and much like hockey, soccer is relegated to niche' markets.

The one redemption that the sport has is our youth. The SUV/ soccer mom generation has slews of kids learning the sport and playing it at a young age.

This should translate to increased revenues and leverage of the coveted bored non committal sports viewer market share - in about 10 years MAH BOI!!!!

Personally, I don't hate the game and I wish for it to prosper in the USA, but our sports culture is very different from overseas. Then the game degenerates into 60 yard long balls trying to latch onto a lone striker. There would be even less goals scored.

The reason a lot of American people I've spoken to (mostly family living over there) for the dislike of Football is that they enjoy the spectacle/hype of American Football, its more liked for its entertainment value rather than appreciation of skill and tense build up.
