Okay, I think I could just go ahead and post something serious in here:
The major North American sports call their finals the World Championshps generally because the American/Canadian leagues could be considered the worldwide pinnacle of their respective professions. Players from all over the world come to America for the NBA and Major League Baseball, and they could generally be considered the best team in the world at what they do, and when it's arguable (and most likely guaranteed) that they aren't, they don't use the World Champions moniker. You don't see whoever wins the MLS Cup calling themselves the World Champions, do you? Same with the Grey Cup and the Stanley Cup. That's why they have Cups instead of World Championships.
Personally I'd like to see the World Series winner go up against the Japan Series winner to definitively crown a world Champion, but it's generally accepted (on the Japan side of the argument anyways) that the MLB team would beat the Japanese team. I mean, I'd just love to see some exhibitions between Japanese and American teams (like, say, do three here and three there for a laff), but it'd be much better if it MEANT something.
