Thompson and other involved GB management just wants to keep Their job. They drafted Rogers, they invested all this time and money into him, and next year he's a free agent. If Brett is competing for the starting job, he'll win it. If he plays again this season and does well(and there's no reason to believe the Pack will completely tank this year), Rogers will see he isn't needed. There are A LOT of places that need a QB. And he's a free agent next year. So if he just up and left Green Bay, never playing a full season, getting paid some good money to be a backup, it would be seen as a failure. If that happened they'd have basically wasted a draft pick, salary cap, and training for somone else's starting quarterback. And for Rogers, if Brett continues to be the starter, it makes all the sense in the world to take whatever lucrative deal other teams throw at his feet.
Green Bay wants to keep Rogers, and Brett staying retired is the only way.
