I think everyone has completely written the Brewers off without even playing one playoff game. ESPN keeps saying shit about how Sabathia is the only starter they have and the only reason they're in the playoffs now that Sheets i s down with an injury. This is bullshit. We won 6 of the last 7 games down the stretch, only 2 of which were Sabathia starts. We have done so well in the last week without any help whatsoever from Sheets, and we even got an unexpected gift in the form of a Yovani Gallardo start, when he was supposed to be on the shelf til 2009. Another starter who had a fantastic end to the year was Dave Bush, who has transformed from the goat to a legitimate number 2 starter in the playoffs. We also got a six inning, 4 hit, one run performance from Suppan on friday night, so I think our starting rotation right now is as strong as Philly, LA, Boston, TB, or Minnesota.
And all year long everyone has been talking about how the Brewers have a bullpen as bad as the Metskies, but let's look at what they've done recently. If you take out "Gas can" Torres, who without a doubt has been terrible, the Brewers bullpen has thrown 23 shutout innings since the start of the last homestand. That isn't just one guy over and over again, but Mota, Gagne, Coffey, Villanueva, Parra, and especially Seth "Big Red" McClung have been absolutely solid down the stretch. I think our bullpen will be fine as long as Sveum stays away from using Torres all that often, or at least keeping him on a short leash. I would much rather have Eric Gagne in there at closer the way those two are pitching.
