John Vanbiesbrouck was the first starting goalie of the Florida Panthers (which played in downtown Miami until 1998...so yes for a few years Miami did have a hockey team). Despite losing out to Mike Richter as the Rangers starting goalie, he had his best years in Florida, and was among the top tier of netminders in the NHL during the mid-90's. He left Florida in 1998.
Scott Mellanby was a starting forward for Florida as well. Before Florida, he was a solid second-line forward. In Florida, he was one of Florida's top scorers. He was best known for creating the legendary "rat trick" and helping the Panthers getting to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1996. He left Florida in 2001.
