Here's an interesting question. How well would the best players from the 20th century compete against a modern team? Even a really bad one like the Nationals? Let's say for the sake of argument that everyone has the same equipment (gloves, cleats, etc).

I'm not sure they'd be able to. Could Babe Ruth handle a modern pitcher's fastball? Could Honus Wagner field a fast grounder and make the throw to first quickly enough to nab one of today's runners?

20th century teams couldn't beat Japan minor leaguers. I'm serious.

theyd do terrible

Do you mean early 20th century? I think after about 1980 or 1990 it's the same as today.

If Babe Ruth played today, he'd be benched for being overweight. And forced to play as DH.

There are a bunch of fat baseball players, if he played today he'd get struck out everytime

Yeah, that makes more sense. There are a lot of players from the 90s who are still active or who only recently retired.

I think a team made up of the best players from the 50s-70s would hold its own, but if you're looking at players who retired before 1950, I don't think they'd do well at all.

Babe Ruth was slim and athletic for the great part of his career.

Ruth wasn't a fatass earlier in his career, and I believe that with modern conditioning he'd maintain that fitness in the modern era. Also, modern ballparks are much smaller and homer friendly than the giant Yankee stadium of Ruth's day. I think he'd be the same superstar today.

The advantages for the modern players would be pitching speed and player speed. For this reason I'd think the modern team would probably win, but I think guys like Ruth and Ted Williams would be all-stars in teh modern era.

Depends if we're talking about genetics, physical and mental attributes and relative talents OR just the pure skills and athletic abilities that players possessed at their heights. If it is the latter, mediocre modern players smoke old-timers in every sport.

Also, Ruth's villain status would make Manny Ramirez look like High School Musical.

Man, fuck Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth would hit around 900 home runs playing in the sandboxes of today.

Roberto Clemente could play any time any where. Same goes for Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, and a number of other guys. Pitchers could play in any time period and play well. Mordecai "Three-Finger" Brown would probably do better today than when he played in the 20s and 30s

Half of them would be kicked out of the league immediately for racist language.

i guess it depends on what rules they would play. if modern players played whole game with one ball only, spitballs, running pitches or ballparks where whild pitch could move runner from first to third, theyd loose big

>Lou Gehrig

Dunno how many teams want a dude with ALS starting for them.

seeing as how the strike zone was bigger
bats were less structurally sound
baseballs were not as tight
i would say babe ruth wouldnt hit any more than 150 home runs a year
in fact one year he did hit 100 home runs
but alot of them were ruled doubles though by todays rules they were home runs

also back then every capable athlete played baseball
now some go to basketball some go to football even a few go to hockey
like you would see somebody like tom brady or brett farve on the mound throwing pitches instead of footballs so baseball was more competative back then

hard to say i dont think i've ever seen video of him pitching so i dont know what kinda movement or speed he had
but the natural talent is there so he probably could have adapted and still did well given today's coaching and training techniques

Just what is it exactly that makes players today so much better than players of the past?

If a ball tailed foul after it went over the fence, it was ruled a double.

Perhaps baseball would be marginally more entertaining, but it would still suck to watch.
