Record Ratings for NBC's Olympic Opening Ceremony in China Anonymous
... And these record ratings for the Olympics are in the year 2008 - where overall TV ratings for all networks has fallen, where internet viewing is widespread and there is 12-hour time difference between the US/China.

Record Ratings for NBC's Olympic Opening Ceremony
======================
NBC’s Olympic dream of ratings fireworks has come true. The network’s coverage of the Summer Games got off to a roaring start Friday with an opening ceremony that's trending as the highest-rated non-U.S. opener ever.

The four-hour Beijing ceremony received a 21.5 (37 share) overnight household rating from metered markets. That's up 19% from the overnight numbers from 2004's Athens ceremony (18.0/30) and 16% higher than Sydney in 2000 (18.5/32).

Through the first two days of coverage, Friday and Saturday, NBC has averaged a 16.2 household rating and 30 share in primetime, up 22 percent over a 13.3/25 for Athens four years ago.

The opening ceremonies Friday night had a particularly strong showing, averaging an 18.6/33, up 27 percent over a 14.6/27 in Athens. Some 34.2 million total viewers tuned in, 9 million better than Athens and bettering the most recent season finale for American Idol, the top series on broadcast.

That marked the highest-rated non-domestic Summer Olympics ever, bettering an 18.1/36 for the 1960 Rome Games on CBS, according to Nielsen.

Saturday NBC had an equally strong first night of actual competition. The network averaged a 13.9/27 for its primetime telecast, from 8:30 to 11:49 p.m.

yeah, they were 'faked' ... see

keep your tin-foil hat on. only a 10 second snippet of the fireworks, showing the fireworks 'footprints' leading to the main stadium (Bird's Nest) was CGI'ed.

even that was real, they only cgi that part for the television version because it was deemed to dangerous by the IOC for a helicopters to film the real firework.

For me the most impressive was opening drum act, followed by 'the ball' and fire starting. That little girl singing was also cute.
Overall, whole thing was a bit too long for my taste, even if you forget country walkthrough.

ADD spotted?

The fireworks in Athen and Sydney lasted three times as long but they looked like child play in comparison. This was the greatest opening ceremony of anything ever and I very much doubt that London can keep up with it (but I sure hope so for our entertainment).

anybody know which not 42GB HD torrent is best? not seen this yet and i was looking forward to watching it. then i read the comments on the NBC video saying there's an ad-break every ten minutes that cuts out part of the ceremony. can anyone confirm? is the korean language one better if you don't give a shit about what's being said?

There were like commercials every 10 minutes on NBC, but then again they did pay about $1 billion for the rights to broadcast the Olympics

It was the Summer Olympics and then everything else on Sunday night as NBC's coverage that included gymnastics and swimming delivered roughly 10 times the young-adult audience of other networks.

The overnight ratings for Sunday's primetime portion averaged a 21.3 household rating/35 share, up 16% vs. Athens in 2004 (18.3/29) to become the top-rated first Sunday of a non-U.S. Summer Olympics since Barcelona in 1992. This 21.3 average was six times NBC's closest pursuer (3.6 for CBS).

Too much money for far too little
Honestly, our media would've said it was good even if China spent half that budget

The next one is in London, if you want to be more techincal and count the winter gaems, Vancouver.

Seriously, you think that they can top this? Seriously?

I think people forget that previous Olympic ceremonies recently have featured things like a bunch of abstract art in Athens and, at the SLC closing, giant puppets of phony dinosaurs voiced by Donny and Marie.
