Will the Florida Panthers break their playoff drought?

I think so.

They bulked up on defense, which is a good thing, because Florida was notorious for giving up too many shots. I see them as winning the Southeast, or at the very least clinching a lower playoff seed.

Oh, and fuck the Tampa Bay Bolts.

Fuck you, too.

Anyway, NFL is going on right now, so it's not really the bets time to discuss hockey on /sp/

Yeah... wait about a week to post this thread.

Sage so it dies quietly.

Although I was a little butthurt at Mike van Ryn going, he was majorly injury-prone. It made sense to see him go. We got McCabe out of the deal.

We drafted a fuckload of defensive prospects. We also got two awesome defensemen in exchange for Jokinen. J-Bo is still onboard, as is Bryan Allen. Corey Murphy is an awesome quarterback, but he's too small to play a purely defensive game.

Offense...well, the Cats don't have any franchise forwards. We have veterans Richard Zednik and Cory Stillman, and there's lots of young guys like Michael Frolik and Keaton Ellerby, who spent the last few years polishing their skills in the juniors. Weiss, Horton, and Booth will continue to dominate offensively, they have awesome chemistry and work great together...its just that neither of the "Three Amigos" have broken out yet. This will be their year...I think Horton will have an 80+ point season. He just needs more focus and discipline, he gets in too many physical altercations.

There is no room in the East for Florida to make any serious inroads. They'll probably post a better win/loss record but they don't have a hope in hell of cracking 95 points and making the playoffs.

As long as the Pens lose and CB bawwws I'll be happy.

I'd like to revise my post. Florida is going to get hammered this year. If they put up 35 wins I think you should consider the year a success.

>>320323

Pens will challenge for the #1 spot in the East again.

No, Vokoun cant carry a team, hell look at the 'nucks.

If by Pens, you mean Bolts, then yes, probably.
>> Anonymous
Panthers could probably win a lower seed in the east. I think it could happen. East is a generally weaker conference.

Didn't the Panthers get swept in the finals in '96. They need two decades of silence to wash away the stink.
>> Anonymous
>>320544
yeah, they got swept in the Finals...

but they also beat #1 seed Philadelphia Flyers, and the Lemieux-Jagr-Barasso Pittsburgh Penguins

tl;dr, fuck you, 1996 Panthers was a godly squad

A professional graphic artist submitted this to Sunrise Sports and Entertainment (the holding company that owns the Florida Panthers) as an "updated" logo for the team.

SS&E loved the new logo, but say its too soon to implement it.

If, by some miracle, the Pens make it back to the finals they'll get their asses kicked by the West.

The Panthers had a good team that year for two reasons:
1) Defense (Paul Laus, Ed Jovanovski, Brian Skrudland who was a defense-style forward)
2) Goaltending (John Vanbiesbrouck)

Defense and Goaltending win games, not flashy scorers like that faggot Cindy Crosby. Any fuckshit nutless monkey can put a puck in a net, but not everyone can keep the puck from going in.

Colorado simply had better Defense (Adam Foote, Sandis Ozolinsh, Uwe Krupp) and a better Goalie (Patrick fucking Roy). Whether if it was Florida or Pittsburgh that went to the Finals, either team would have been gobbled up by Colorado.

Ah, the 96 Panthers.

The most important thing that happened in the entire 1996 playoffs was in the first half of the first period of game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Florida was called for two holding penalties in ten minutes.

Why was that important? Because the Panthers clutched, grabbed, obstructed, and basically cheated their way to the Cup Final. I watched every game of both series, and guys like Jovanovski, Skrudland, and Mellanby spent the entire playoffs with one hand on the jerseys of Lemieux, Lindros, Jagr, and LeClair. It was completely disgusting, boring, awful, and unwatchable, and the NHL finally decided to crack down in the Cup Final.

So, fuck the worthless, untalented 96 Panthers.

The Ovechkin/Federov line is going to rape the Southeast this year, so no divisional champion seed. Montreal, New Jersey, and Philadelphia are guaranteed play-off teams. In the end, the Panthers will be competing against Buffalo New York, Ottawa, Tampa Bay, and the Maple Lols.

If by "the West", you mean "Detroit" then you would be correct.

No other team in the Western Conference is hot shit.

you are completely underestimating the stars, I would agree with you in last years playoffs where they lost to Vancouver, but after this past year they showed that they can produce the points to back up Turco and get the game won, they were the only team that did anything to even bother Detroit this past year, and they will probably finish 2nd in the west behind Detroit

Southeast = Worst division in hockey. And don't give me that Stanley Cup B.S. They're lucky if they get two teams into the post-season.

honestly, i'd go as far to say it's the worst division in pro sports

sure the nfc/afc west is horrible, but they do provide some sort of entertainment. and there are classic rivalries (mostly bay area stuff)

the playoff system for the nhl needs a fix. it's total bullshit when the SED winner instantly becomes the 3rd seed, even though there are better teams up north that post better records

OP here. Hello.

I've been a Panthers fan since 1993, and I never give up on hometown teams (I'm a Dolphins fan as well). I always give my Panthers all my support, because hockey is my favorite pro sport.

I'm not gonna be a bandwagon fairweather faggot that just cheers for teams when they do well.

You're either hometown or you're fairweather. So fuck you faggots.

Sorry to shatter your dreams but there is no chance in hell the Panthers make the playoffs.

They are weak as shit on offense. People claim they have a great defense yet they were only middle of the pack in terms of goals allowed last season. Brian McCabe is not your savior. Nathan Horton is not the answer on offense. I'm sorry but letting Jokinen go and not bothering to replace him is going to hurt.
