Hey soccerfags, please help me out here. What exactly does a manager do once the game starts? Since so much of the action is ad-libbed reaction and the pitch is too big to communicate, do they do anything more than chain smoke and whine at the refs? Does he call in formations or plays? Does he just yell out pointers like 'watch this guy, he keeps trying to do xxxx"? Help me understand why he's even in the stadium.

He can communicate with players during the game, I hear managers shouting all the time. He delivers the team talk before the game and at half time. The most important thing he does is make the substitutions and reorganize formations this way.
