Well, considering Track and Field hasn't started, Basketball hasn't ended, Softball hasn't ended, Beach Volleyball hasn't ended, Phelps still has two medals to go, etc.

Also, it's not as if NBC has always gone by total medal count either by the way.

Congrats to the US for losing more times than China
>> Anonymous
I like to keep score like this.

2 points for gold
1.5 points for silver
1 point for bronze

Therefore, ATM, USA=63 points, China=62 points.

I think this is a fair way to do it. You could also do it 3 for gold, 2 for silver, and 1 for bronze. But then China would be winning LOL. Either way, USA is gonna kick ass with a couple more golds from Phelps and Track and Field, basketball, ect.

Being third best in the world is worth a point, especially when you start with 25 Olympic qualifiers and shit. I rate on the 3/2/1 scale, so according to the OP China is ahead by a gold and a silver right now.

But why can't it matter for most medals? I mean, if you could get a bronze in every sport, wouldn't that be saying something? That means you're better than most countries in just about every sport. That's a pretty good all around achievement. So if you got the most medals, that's kind of saying that you're country is good ALL AROUND, instead of just specializing on a few things to win some golds. Sure, you would wanna be the best in everything, but that's not gonna happen. (even Slovakia has a gold medal) So why not be good in most things...AKA most medals won.

Quit arguing. The rest of the world is riding China's coattails, so they'll stick to the gold-only, silver's-the-first-loser argument.

I think the US is projected to even up the gold medal differential by the end of the games anyway, so we'll be juding based on silver and bronze medal counts anyways, whether you subscribe to the 3/2/1 type systems or not.

You, or the commentator you were arguing for, implied America is the only country allowing foreign-born athletes to compete for them; thus it being unfair.

You'll have to point out where the other side said America was the only country to do this. You'll note that this comment
>I mean, if you can find something wrong with a Sudanese refugee being given a home away from slaughter and then becoming an olympic athlete for his new home and the fucking flag-bearer then clue me in

That would never happen in any European country. They always talk about American racism, but when you actually look at it, Euros are FAR worse than Americans when it comes to race relations.

The mere fact that the Spanish basketball team thinks it's okay to make slanted eye gestures in a team photo, you know something is flying over their heads when it comes to racial sensitivity.
