Anyone else watch the triathlon? That final stretch of the run segment was fucking nuts, I was totally all like "OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOD!"

German uberman somehow beat Whitfield. One of the more exciting events of the games so far.

Whitfield started his push a bit too early so he burnt out before reaching the finish line. I'm glad he at least hit the podium though, I felt so bad for him missing out in 2004 because of some flukey shit with his bike.

isnt the german guy much younger as well? i figure that played a big part in it, as german guy sprinted a lot longer anyway

He hadn't won any world championships or anything like that though, so nobody was expecting him to be a medal contender. The favourite was Javier Gomez and he wound up being 4th. They even had a spanish IOC official handing out the medals because he was expected to take gold, lol.

Whitfield's running is absolutely unreal; when he golded in 2000 he was something like 30th at the end of the bike run. He should be doing the 10000m for Canada on the side.

lol, someone forgot to tell him there's a run after the bike

And that was after crashing in a 14-bike pileup. Guy is ridiculous.

Was that in 2000? I remember in Athens he had some kind of bike-related fuckup and even then he finished like 10th. Either way the guy's a fucking beast at long distance running.

Yup. Wikipedia:

"Whitfield got up off the ground after he and 14 other riders crashed in the bike race portion of the event and worked his way back near the leaders. In the foot race, he resolutely cut down the field one at a time then put on a brilliant finishing kick to take the victory. His final time was 1:48:24.02, which still (as of 2008) stands as the fastest Olympic triathlon."

WTF, usually when you get in a bike pile-up it's game over.

Fucking balls, I REALLY wanted to watch this event too. I watch NBC for Olympix every night so I figured they'd mention it and I'd be able to catch it.

Fucking NBC... They aren't even showing live shit anymore

Ugh..

I've noticed they generally don't show events unless there's a potential for an American to medal. It's terribly biased coverage, a pity since it's the only network with the rights to show the Olympics in the States. I feel sorry for you guys.

HA THE SPANIARDS FAILED

AND WHERE'S AMERICA???

America has never been much of a triathlon power. Commonwealth has that shit covered.

You might need a canadian proxy, but check on it in a day or so. Canada got silver so rest assured they're going to have a full-length recording of it. And if you're impatient you can watch the women's triathlon.

Never mind, it's already up. Check under triathlon in the Sports category.

Yeah my brother called me down to watch the last 5 minutes. Whitfield was 4th for a minute or two, then he fell way the fuck behind so I was like :( but then he turned on his fucking powerjets and stormed past those bitches. But then that german dood used his uber reserves and Whitfield was too spent to get past him :(

It was still fucking awesome though.

This is the last time I write papers for school while watching olympics, at the end of the paper i wrote "Did you saw that German guy on Triathlon, we never saw it comig!"

keep it in

Whitfield said that above anything else he wanted to beat Javier Gomez. He didn't eve get onto the podium so I think Simon's going to be satisfied with the silver.

If he waited another 15-20 seconds to go into Usain Bolt Mode it would have been an exact replica of 2000

the best part about the german guy was that the only reason he got involve in the triathlon was that he admired a triathlon athlete.
