I like watching hockey every now and then but I wouldn't necessarily call myself a fan.

I have a question for j00!!!!

What the living FUCK is the +/- stat?

Seriously, out of all sport stats, that has to be the most retarded, next to Y.A.C.

It is the difference between how many goals your team scores and how many teams the opponent scores while you are on the ice. And is very related to how good a player is.

bull fucking shit its an indicator to how good a player is; ovechkin off the top of my head had 92 points last year but went -18 or 19
>> Anonymous
It's pretty worthless really
>>32800described it right, except it's not related to how good the player is, and goals scored on the Powerplay, or killing a powerplay do not affect a players +/-

Right, +/- really doesn't have much bearing on how good a player is, defenseman maybe, but a forward not so much. Ovie has 54 goals and is only a +15 (18 on the PP which does not affect +/-)

+/- is a good basketball stat to keep track of, because of player presence that don't show up on box scores, like a good passing Center.

its a general measurement of the defensive awareness + offensive production of a player. Notice how Kovalchuk has a ton of points but is a - player, that means his team is scored on during hsi shifts more often than he scores. Lidstrom is a +9001 player because he's the best d-man in the game, having a great balance of defensive ability, power-play ability, and general scoring/playmaking ability.

for example, if a team loses 10-2 but players on the losing team are in the +, it means they usually dominated their shifts, not allowing the other team to score on them. This happened last week. Likewise, if a player on the winning team is a -, it means they suck shit, especially in a blowout like that.

It's generally pretty useless...but there IS something to be said about players like Nick Lidstrom, who's something like +OVER 9000!!!

It's generally pretty useless, though. Especially for forwards.

...And goalies, I suppose. Although you generally don't call a goalies +/- as such, but more often "the final score."

it is the best stat in sports. It tell how good an all-around player they are. If they had a similar stat in basketball, maybe some of the ball hoggers and stat padders would actually care about playing some defense.

Yeah it would be nice if they had a similar stat in basketball, like maybe THE FUCKING +/- STAT.

THAT THEY HAVE.

IN BASKETBALL.

Sorry, I'm not too into nigger sports. I don't follow what stats they keep. But just by watching ESPN and stuff, I never hear it mentioned.

Actually, Vs. does a decent job of coving and publicizing games. It's no HNIC, but it's not the HD Net coverage either. (HD hockey is damn near the best thing ever, though)

That said I generally watch wings games on the local FSN when I can, and of course I watch HNIC every saturday night.

It'd be sweet to get a TSN feed, but probably not going to happen anytime soon.

Ironically, the main knock against the current NBA leader in +/- is that he's a ballhog, and he isn't anything terribly special on defense either (though he's certainly no slouch).

Then again, all the good defensemen have great +/- stats

+/- only works when you compare players on the same team. good teams score more goals than they give up, bad teams score fewer goals than they give up, that's not necessarily a reflection on any single player himself. it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

there's a reason there are 8 red wings in the top 25 for +/-.
