Personally i think he deserved to be sent off. He was bullying the ref right from the start, and he thought that if he ran over he'd be able to intimidate the ref some more and not get any more similar decisions like the Torres yellow card for his team, because the ref would be scared of him. The ref had had enough of his shit and got rid of him.

The FA are too spineless to crack down hard on footballers but they should do. I'd like to see footballers be made to treat referees with the same respect a rugby player, a tennis player, a cricket player or a golfer is expected too.

The ref could have handled it better though, like maybe calling Gerrard over and telling him that Mascherano would be off if he didn't cut it out. I'm sure Gerrard, or in fact any good captain could get their player to behave.
