So, I'm thinking of going to martial arts classes. The ones that catch my interest most are Taekwondo, Kickboxing and Muay Thai, but can't decide which one I should go for.

Anyone offer any advice?

for practicality - kickboxing
>> Anonymous

See, I figured that. But from what I've read Muay Thai and Kickboxing are meant to be quite similar its just that Thai allows the use of knees and elbows.

Though, for some reason, Muay Thai is meant to be MUCH harder to learn...

kick boxing.

Muay Thai if you want Knees and Elbows, Kickboxing if you want extremely strong kicks and punches.

You decide, don't listen to biased faggots. "DUR HUR MUAY THAI IS TEH BEST EVERERERER." or "KICKBOXING IS THE MOST LEGIT!" shit.

for self defense and exercise... Krav Maga

Muay Thai.
>> Anonymous
>>17495

I second this. Krav Maga and Muay Thai were created for the same purposes, but Krav Maga is even less flashy than Muay Thai.

Human Weapon did a very good show about it. As usual, the two white guys failed at it, but the method is great.

Also, be very careful what school you choose. Of the three you mentioned, it is very easy to get caught in the "sport" aspect of it.

Olympic Tae Kwan Do is a sport, not a method with which to save your life. The others can be similiarly corrupted. If you are only learning how to use your style to take down OTHER practitioners of that style, you have a problem.

That is to say, if you aren't learning disarms, how to defend against weapons, and how to defend yourself on the ground, you'll find what you've just payed hundreds or thousands of dollars to learn is shit.

Wrestling sucks shit, enjoy getting thrown and pinned by Judoka, or submitted by BJJ-fags.
>> Anonymous
>>17505
Uhh, what? Muay Thai is a martial art, Krav Maga is a self defense form.
>> Anonymous
A friend of mine did krav maga; he enjoyed it very much. I've always had a soft spot for either kali, or silat.

Both give you a good foundation for armed and un-armed self defense; with an emphasis on the universal (translatable) key motions between the two (armed v. un-armed), and how the motions apply in both offensive and defensive scenarios. In addition, they both ought to involve your entire body as a potential 'weapon', hands, feet, knees, elbows, etc.

Also of large importance: Figure out exactly what you want from a martial art, and don't be afraid to try a variety of different arts before picking one. Ultimately, you want to get involved in an art that has a balance of a possibility of self-expression and self-defense application.

In that regards, perhaps it'd be best to get a list of local schools. Give 'em a ring and see if they offer the first lesson for free, or if they let you pay per class. Let them know that you still have decision making to do.

Best of luck!
>> Anonymous
Do whatever the hell you want. Unless you want to stress the fitness/self defense/sport/pajama wearing asian kitsch aspect of your experience, then maybe advice could be offered.
>> Anonymous
>>17505
to bad you're fucked when someone pulls a knife on you anyways, doing something like krav maga might help to some extent but they only train one move over and over which isnt realistic.

Krav maga is the way to go for self defense, for competition Muay Thai / Kickboxing (they're similiar in many aspects), not only that but they're fucking awsome to get in or keep in shape. Krav Maga is not an excersise so don't expect an workout.
>> Anonymous
>>17461
Also consider kenpo. Gutsy use of elbows and close-in force, no flashy high kicks. Only downside is the insanely long forms to advance in belts.

>>17515
I agree 100%. I bailed on tae kwon do at red belt and went to the tougher arts - kenpo, jeet kun do, and some muay thai.

I found the older you get, the less you think of high kicks, but an uppercut is ALWAYS useful.

Silat is great. Arm lock a guy, take him down, then stomp on his face whilst breaking his wrist.

Well the whole thing depends on how tough you are. If you are a little bitch take Taekwondo, if you are looking for the sport and not the blood (which is understandable) go kick boxing. Lastly if you are one hardcore mother fucker take krav maga and Muay Thai, they are by far the most brutal in technique and practice.

Disclaimer: I don't know shit about armlock and such so this is speculation.

Anyway I've done MT, spar 2-4 times a week and tbh in a fight situation I sure wouldn't be looking for armlock or anything. Sparring, while not same as street fight, make you used to fighting close with your hand and feet, teaches you to block strikes etc. I'm quite sure I'd have an edge against someone who hasn't done mt or such because they ahve NO idea how to block and probably leave themselves open to uppercuts etc.

tldr; figh experience, in the end it's going to help you much more than any armlock you've practiced million times.

I beg to differ.
>> Anonymous
>>17606
Actually, the in general striking martial arts are fucked when theyre matched up against any form of submission style, but in a street fight I'd rather be a Muay Thai practitioner then a BJJ one seeing as how concrete fucking hurts, and so does your opponents stomps.
>> Anonymous
>>17615

Did he use his uber submission holds and judo throw to beat a guy in REAL fight instead of one with rules? no? then it means nothing.
>> Anonymous
>>17617

BJJ + MT = fuckwing then? Don't know about krav mage but I'm probably going to take up BJJ at some point. Mt when I'm standing, BJJ to take down / if I'm taken down. That's the most used combo in mma anyway I think.
>> Anonymous
>>17618

Since when did Muay Thai have some notorious prevalence of owning in street fights? Oh, that's right, never. If anything, Boxers are most well known for beating people down in ZOMG REAL FIGHTS!

Didn't say anything about mt having "notorious prevalence of owning in street fights" did I? I do agree that boxing would be more usefull unless you can pull of head kick in stressful situation, and it better hit or you're in trouble.
>> Anonymous
>>17624
Muay Thai IS boxing.
Only elbows can be substituted for fists.
*Superior*
>> Anonymous
>>17626

Then it's all good, I'm not going to argue about it if that's how it is.

But tbh argoung about things like thses are useless, I'm sure many Judokas have beat the living hell out of people in street fights, as have mt krava mage etc. practitioners.
>> Anonymous
>>17631
My arms are longer than your elbows, I'd just go Hitman-style and flicker jab you into hell.
>> Anonymous
>>17623
You dont necessarily have to do precisly BJJ and MT, Judo or sambo would be just as good (actually judo/sambo is preferable in a street fight since it involves throwing your opponent on his head and then you could get the fuck out before the cops show). Kickboxing and MT is very similiar but remember that while kicking is working good in sports it requires space for you to manouver. I'd honestly take western boxing combined with Judo for the streets.Just remember to get a good judo dojo and a good boxing club, alot of the shit out there is mcdojos which only are trying to get money and does so by lying to the soccer moms that what they're learning will actually help them.

Krav maga is basicly every "dirty" trick in the book, you train ball hitting, eye gouging, hair pulling and more. I did it when I did my military service and while I dont like it (I train MT+BJJ for competition) its probably the most effective way to fend off multiple opponents or opponents with weapons, should be noted that while they teach you things there is very little that can help you when you get ganged or gets a knife pulled on you so don't expect it to be some kind of win against everything.
>> Anonymous
>>17629
PLEASE DO NOT EVER MENTION HEAD KICKS. Seriously, hard, Thai-style round or front kick to the knee and then rain fists and elbows to the head.
>> Anonymous
>>17639

I've got more than few kick to knee while sparring, and while not done with max power / by a pro, the head kick sure hurt a lot more and was actaully harder to block because you don't expect it. But yea I would never to a head kick in fight situation, mere thought somehow seems ridiculous. BUT if you can pull it off why not.
>> Anonymous
>>17636
Ugh. Legs are longer than arms and hit harder than a jab ever would.

There's nothing saying a thai fighter can't 'flicker-jab' as well.

and if, let me repeat, IF close enough, elbows and knees can be devastating

We were discussing the practicality of Thai boxing in a street fight. All I'm saying is that the flexibility and brutality of the addition of elbows, knees, and legs may make it *slightly* more effective than 'ordinary' boxing
>> Anonymous
>>17639
Thank you! Everybody underestimates the power of a well placed leg kick. One good leg kick can leave a person limping for a week, and if that isn't distracting enough a kick or two to the torso or groin(if we are still talking street fights) will take out most everybody you come up against.
>> Anonymous
>>17651
Muay Thai doesn't teach the Philly Shell, nor the flicker jab. Sorry buddy, but just because you "can" do it, doesn't mean you're realistically going to learn the move.
>> Anonymous
>>17652
You dont need any martial arts training for hitting people in the balls.
>> Anonymous
>>17652

or they are going to raise their knee instinctively, and you're going to break your shin or something.
>> Anonymous
>>17659
haha no, anyone that does hobby MT wont have enough power to do this, hell the pros dont even have that kind of power or acceleration (and fuckwin there are some pretty fucking hard kickers). Not saying it couldnt happen (since I bet you saw the shin break video) but it's just not going to happen to average joes on the streets.
>> Anonymous
>> maybe you'd appreciate this.

A friend of mine and I were sparring. He could kick me in the head if:
a) he wanted to
b) he wasn't so damn slow

Anyway, once, maybe an accident, maybe not, he picked his foot up not even two inches like he was moving forward/lunging, and smacked me in the shin, right above the ankle.

Damn near fell over I did, and if he had followed through with his hands that would been the end of it.

What the hell is a philly shell/flicker jab and how does it give an advantage over long range kicks and close range elbows/knees

My own brand of martial arts fighting, which I do while naked to distract my foes, can kick the shit out of any of these martial arts styles. It's called "Shut the fuck up about which style is better than they other". OP, when it comes down to it, try out a few classes of whatever is in your area to get a feel for which ones you may like. Saying one art is better over another is pure shit because it all boils down to the martial artist. Avoid the more "sport" oriented schools if you aren't into that.

to bad you're only partially right, effectiveness in martial arts is obvious, a guy training TMA karate will get fucked over everytime by someone who trains MT, it's just like that. But most MAs are relative close in what they teach which basicly makes it boil down to the individual.

My advice? For self defense try track and field. It's your most solid chance of beating every single type of martial arts training you could possibly come up against in that it bypasses your opponent's level of skill and strength.

Other than that, try competitive shooting. A slightly more risque technique, but it'll certainly give you the one to one advantage.

my advice, stay in and watch tv and play video games, that way you wont get into bad situations, just buy pizza and tell him to leave the pizza on the floor while you slip out the cash, also get reinforced steel door.

I think my advice might be slightly more practical and less restrictive, but if that's worked for you I've no reason to bash it. No offense, but people might get the idea that you're a puny little bitch if you go that far to avoid conflict.

Still, that's much better than the opposite; going around expecting to get into random fights and training yourself to brutalize those with less training and experience for the sake of proving your manliness. lol childhood abuse and cock issues.

>>17780
"Risque" technique? What, are you doing it naked?

Srsly, although I'm proficient with handguns, I feel a hell of a lot better knowing I can stop something quick with an elbow, low kick or palm jab. Also, the great thing about martial arts classes is that you learn what it's like to be hit and punched in the face. Flame away, losers, but most women don't know what that feels like. (Those that do, learn to counter. Viciously.)

>>17992

>> Anonymous
>>18541

Because being able to take down fucking bulls isn't a feat of strength or skill at all ....

I've yet to see anyone disprove Rickson nor Mas' records other than attempts by fat computer nerds. People who I know who've met Mas knew he was a beastly fighter, and their word counts for more than some faggot on the internet who got screwed over by some McDojo.
>> Anonymous
>>18896
I saw Mas highlight or whatever on jewtube, the guy fights scrubs and most of them are exhibition.
Rickson might be a fucking legend but the gracie family is a bunch of liars, just like any other company do to promote their business, because if you'd know anything about the gracie family it's that its all business.

So the cowboys that wrestle bulls and what not all day are great fighters? Its irrelevant wether a person can wrestle a bull or not.

The only real recorded videos of him fighting are against a student in a sparring match. I'm trying to figure out how this suddenly makes his other matches irrelevant. Also, great job ignoring his other feats of strength such as breaking ****ing rocks with chops or the fact that his knuckles are one huge callous.

Find me a Cowboy that took down bulls barehanded on his own two feet, and I'll get back to you on that. Trying to tell me that a man who risks getting gored at any instant (which actually did happen to Mas a few times) doesn't have the reflexes to fight a person is asinine. I'm not saying that JUST because he can fight bulls that he's the best fighter ever, but it certainly is a factor.

The fact that noone but his own students and his followers can attest for his prowess and feats of power just goes to show that it's just more martial arts BS. It's like that "kiai master" dudewho claimed that he could beat anyone with just a slap/shout/whatever, and his entire school attested that this was true, and he even got on the news several times. Eventually, some random MMA dude or whatever took him up on his shit, and owned him bigtime.

I used to have a boner for Mas as well, but I'm far too disillusioned with all the "amazing masters of martial arts" that I won't trust a single one of them until they have it on film and against someone that isn't their own student or otherwise on their payroll. And seriously, who knows what they could've given those bulls.

Learn to read, I said him being able to wrestle bulls are irrelevant to his fighting. I seriously doubt any of todays MMA fighters wrestle bulls but I'm pretty sure they'd fuck up Mas big time, wether it be in his prime or not.

As for him only having video of him sparring people just furthers my point, Rickson claims a 400-0 records but have no evidence of it and as such is bullshit, same goes for Mas. Beating up your students in sparring doesn't constitute as having a 200-0 record or whatever you said before.

I bet theres quite a bunch of cowboys that wrestles bulls or what not, but I'm not going to look into it because its irrelevant to this discussion.

Problem with people today who have no fucking clue about martial arts is that they speak of things they think they know something off because they watched Van Damme movie. TMA is exhibition, everything got cheesed up with the 80's and 90's bullshit martial art movies.

Jacques Sandulescu, a man who worked in the Soviet Coal mines, escaped, and made his way to America, wrote a personal account of his friendship with Mas Oyama and attests to his power and skill. I think I'll trust a man who's been through more hardship than you'll ever know over skepticism from someone who probably can't walk up a flight of stairs without clutching his chest.

The hypocrisy is amazing. Let's ignore that there are plenty of instances of TMAs being used in self-defense and that in MMAs most of the techniques used in TMAs are illegal due to the severity.

You just sound more and more stupid every time you post.

No, thats just someone elses word, it's not cold hard evidence for what bullshit he claims.

Mas couldnt hit limbs and make them snap, and if he did that it was a lucky hit and or the person he hit has got some fucking weak bones. This is the thing with TMA, they promote stuff like this , and it's just bullshit.

How in the fuck can TMAs be severe? It's like when people promote their TMA as the dangerous TMA ever, that they can kill people with one punch. Uneducated people believe this crap, exactly like you and you keep forwarding it. Yet again the "it's to dangerous to show, because I might kill someone" is a fucking fallback for the TMA practicioners to not prove their claims.

You sound more and more uneducated about Martial arts every time you post.

More like "if I did this at full speed and you resisted, I'd snap your limb or kill you." Aikido and Hapkido are perfect examples of this as most of their throws are only throws because the attacker is letting go and throwing him/herself rather than risk snapping a limb. Dumb shit.
