If you watch this guy pitch, you'll notice that every single time they throw a new fresh ball back to him, the first thing he does is wipe his hand on his forehead (to gather moisture).
This is because everyday the game balls are rubbed in mud before the game to rough them up. Some pitchers prefer them roughed up, some prefer them slick. He gathers the moisture from his head so because he prefers a slick grip rather than a rough one. From doing this over and over again during games and warm-ups, his hand gets muddy from the sweat picking up the mud off the ball, and he rubs his hat as a nervous tick over and over again all game. Over the long run, it transfers the mud from the ball to his cap, not vice versa.
Get over it, TB was blown the fuck out last night.
