Why do I get the feeling this whole board will be American football vs. European football (soccer)?

American Football lol...

cuz we can't have nice things

Seriously, I care about either sports.
Let's just do what that guy said and call it Soccer and American Football.

Let's call it this way.
Football.
American football.
>> Anonymous
To prove dominance. I like both sports, but American football is so much more brutal. I am sick of seeing soccer players rolling around on the ground trying to get a foul. We all need to agree the rugby wins in the brutality department. Soccer wins in the athletic department. American Football wins in the strategy department.

Football requires padding because of the way tackles are executed. Rugby doesn't allow actual hitting, just grabbing and dragging them to the ground. In football, you are very likely to be hit by a 210 pound linebacker at 15 to 16 miles an hour. Without padding, injuries and even deaths would be far more common.

In summary, Soccer is the more athletic sport. Football is the more strategic sport. Rugby is a unevolved football that is is basically slightly rougher hand soccer.

Barely Sub-Zero Fahrenheit is roughly -20 Celsius, so I'm really wondering why Britain is inhabited by human beings if for three months, it's cold enough to make Ruskies and Canadians bitch.

In other words, shut the fuck up if you think England is one of the coldest countries on Earth.

Again, it's illegal to actually hit people. As in, charge in and knock them on their asses by running full force and shoving your shoulder into their gut.

If people got hit like that without padding or helmets, they would get entirely too many spinal and head injuries. Rugby isn't that tough and most people overplay it by posting pictures of blood caused by stray kleets and scraped knees.

Whoop-de-shit, I've had worse before I was 12 years old.

Anyone saying rugby is less physical/brutal than gridiron should probably try playing both.

Seriously, no hitting in rugby? Perhaps you should at least see a match or three before you turn your mouth into an asshole and bullshit all over yourself.

I've played both. American football is higher impact because of the way it's played. That's why we wear padding.

There is no route running in rugby, for one. You aren't going to get blindsided by a man running at full speed.

I have played both. Hand Soccer with some slightly uncomfortable tackles is a very accurate description for Rugby. American Football requires pads for a fucking reason and it's rather stupid that you think football is a pussy sport just because they want to prevent people from being paralyzed and flat-out dying.

>> Anonymous
>>1683

My, how wrong you are. Not going to get blindsided? You think no one is ever hit without seeing it coming in rugby?

And you think that no one ever "hits?" what's your definition of hitting, exactly? Using one's shoulder at full speed to deflect another player? Happens all the time, the main difference being that in rugby, the person with the ball is the one doing the ol' smash-their-ribcage bit, not the one tackling. Yes, there is a wrap rule that states that the tackler must at least obviously attempt to wrap his arms around the ballcarrier during a tackle, but as with all rules in rugby it's frequently violated and not always caught. It's partially a safety rule, but it's also a logical extension of good play, since the tackler is seeking not just to stop his opponent but also to control how he hits the pitch and force him to play the ball in a way unfavorable for his team.

I didn't say no one hits. The post you're quoting is my first post in this thread. I've played both games many times, I know exactly how much hitting goes on.

No, you do not get blindsided near as often as you do in American football. That's why they wear pads. Period. Rugby is a more physical game, but since there aren't as many huge hits that run the risk of hospitalizing people, you don't need to wear pads for it.
>> Anonymous
>>1700

I'm sorry, Scotland barely gets under sub-zero Celsius on average for two months. You still have 10 to 20 degrees to go to get to Green Bay's temperatures. Mind you, these are the low temperatures, it's not going to be that cold during the day.

Running around doing intense physical exercise in somewhat cold weather isn't bad at all. I've done it in New Hampshire multiple times wearing nothing but boxers as a bet.

>>1721

Apologies, thought you were>>1583and>>1662, meant to reply to that with my first post.

I would say, thought, that given the history of american football, you're putting the cart before the horse. The style of play developed because americans made rugby more safe by instituting play stoppages (Much like rugby league did) and adding protection (Though originally it was little more than leather helmets), not vice versa.

It's unfortunate that there is no real way to measure the toughness of a sport or its players. But I will say that rugby players are better all-around athletes, have wider skillsets, and endure more physical punishment over the course of a match. They also play dirtier, get in more fights, and do a lot more self-regulating of the rules.

AMERIKAN FOOTBALL ISN'T REAL FOOTBALL. IN FOOTBALL YOU USE FEET MOST OF THE TIME.
>> Anonymous
>>1721

This is the most accurate post in this thread. Rugby is the more physically demanding game and you aren't going to get quite the same power behind your hits because you don't always have time to build up your speed. Blindsides are also much less likely, due to how the game is structured, though they aren't quite as common as some people think in American Football.

Regardless, Rugby is sort of a half-way point between soccer and american football, and I enjoy watching all three for the most part.

And stop calling it Rugby, in this thread two completely separate sports have been lumped together under the name "rugby". There is Rugby Union (often referred to as Rugby) and Rugby League (often referred to as League).

Use the terms correctly or not at all.
