MLS season kick off Anonymous
So the new MLS season is underway. The MLS is continuing to improve each and every season, and MLS teams are going to feature heavily in the new CONCACAF Champions League. I see New York being the dominate force this season with a potent attack featuring Jozy Altidore and Juan Pablo Angel. Altidore is the future of US soccer. Hes only 18 and is staring for club and country. but it should be an awesome MLS season

in b4 eurofags start talking shit about MLS

we know that the MLS isnt the premier league, la liga, or serie a.

why is that?

is the MLS not doing a good enough of a job of developing US talent? is it the beckham effect where clubs are now allowed dispensation when signing foreign internationals?

honestly i think the MLS is doing a good job of providing a domestic league where a core of US national team players will ply their trade.

granted, the class of the US national league will play in europe. but the MLS to me is essential for the US side

The USA National team is half of Fulham anyway

DaMarcus Beasley, Kasey Keller, Clint Dempsey, Brian McBride, Eddie Johnson, and a few others i think

whoops my bad, Beasley plays for the Rangers.

Nonetheless, most of the players play for non-US teams.

OP here

I used to love damarcus beasley, especially when he was playing in holland. but im a celtic supporter through and through, and i bleed green and white. so to see him playing for the racist, bigoted, sectarian, loyalist, ignorant blue nosed huns made me cringe.

but there are many US national team players who are in the MLS like Landon Donovan, Brian Ching, and ricardo clark.

but you also have lots of other players who are part of the US squad as well like taylor twellman, johnathan bornstein, ramerio corrales, and brad davis

but just look where the MLS was when it started, where it was just as recently as 5 years ago, and where it is now. its a long term strategy of building soccer in the US, but its coming along

It's a league that's developed steadily, but the quality of play took a huge step forward in the last two years. Given that soccer-specific stadiums are making teams profitable and the rowdy fan cultures of DC and especially Toronto, it seems that things are looking up. It'll never be on par with the big European leagues, but if it gets to the level of la Apertura (what a great name for a league) it'll be great.

Two objections to the style of play: a) The defending is absolutely horrible; not so much in terms of slow defenders or bad tackling, but so many defenders in MLS are tactically retarded. b) Part of the reason why the defending sucks is that they'll get carded for just about anything. The refs call way too tight a game in MLS, and it results in a lot of stoppages and a lot of sending offs that wouldn't happen in Europe.

It's definitely building up, except for a few players like Landon Donovan, many of its best players have just been using it as a training ground, and then jumping ship when they get good.

And it makes sense too, from a players standpoint. If you're already one of the best in the MLS, going to play for a Euro club is the only way to challenge yourself and try to find where your potential is at that point.
