Hay guise,

Am I wrong to want the Hartford Whalers back in the NHL?
>> Anonymous
No, many people do.
>> Anonymous
Send the Blue Jackets back to Hartford, cuz there not doing anything in Columbus...
>> Anonymous
Why would Boston need 2 hockey teams
>> Anonymous
Would that actually work, though? Hartford is a tiny, tiny market, and currently Hartford doesn't have an arena with more than 17,000 seats (the Hartford Civic Center only seats around 14,000). Attendance during the Whalers days was low, and they didn't have much on-ice success (they won a division title, that's about it).

Technically the whalers are still in the NHL

Plus no pro team is getting back into Connecticut until they can put up a respectable stadium

The Hartford Whalers moved to carolina like a decade and a half ago

>>140010
I don't give a fuck. Are the Dallas Stars the Minnesota North Stars? Are the Phoenix Coyotes the Winnipeg Jets? No, they are not. Teams are more than just the roster--they are the fans, the spirit, the love of the sport.

Also, Carolina makes it a point to forget that they were ever the Hartford Whalers. The organ player at the RBC Center is forbidden from playing "Brass Bonanza" and there are no Whalers banners on the rafters. So, fuck Carolina. They are not the Whalers.

LOL Carolina

The whalers were never good, only winning one playoff series in their entire run in the NHL playing in an arena that only held 15,000 fans

Teams need more than love of the game, they need to win occasionally and have the ability to turn a profit, so fuck you. The whalers are never coming back.

Perhaps the same can be said about Vancouver?
>> Anonymous

Unlike the Whalers and the Jets who fucking always sucked balls, the Nordiques were an actually good team.

Remember the good old days of when Mats Sundin could actually play and Stephane Fiset was a starter?

That has to hurt, but it also raises the question of whether or not they would have had a chance had they stayed in Quebec. Patrick Roy was a major part of the championship team, and the Habs and Nords weren't exactly on friendly terms. Would Montreal have been willing to trade arguably their best player to a bitter rival?

A temporary solution to all this faggotry:

During a select few weeks, the NHL will have a "heritage week" much like the NBA did a few seasons ago (when they switched to ABA jerseys). During these weeks, the following will happen:

--The Hurricanes will do a one-night only "home game" at the Hartford Civic Center, wearing Whalers jerseys and being addressed that night as the "Whalers." Brass Bonanza will be played before every period, and after every goal.
--The Avs will do the same at the Colisee Pepsi in Quebec, however they will also play a few road games as the Colorado Rockies.
--The Kings will wear purple and gold.
--Maple Leaf Gardens will be open for one night only for a game against the Leafs and the Habs.
--The Dallas Stars and the Minnesota Wild will both play each other as the "North Stars."
--The San Jose Sharks will wear Oakland Seals uniforms at home and on the road for this period.
--The Columbus Blue Jackets will wear Cleveland Barons uniforms, and play select dates in Cleveland.

Permanent solution: Bring the Whale back to Hartford.

>currently Hartford doesn't have an arena with more than 17,000 seats (the Hartford Civic Center only seats around 14,000).
Edmonton's Rexall Place has fewer than 17000 seats. Ultimately TV ratings and pay-per-view contribute more to a franchise's revenue than raw home game attendance anyway. Having a huge city population is all well and good, but its the number of people who actually give half a fuck about hockey that's what matters. Sure Atlanta is a huge city, does that make it a 'successful' market?

>Attendance during the Whalers days was low
And it isn't for the Islanders, Coyotes, Thrashers, Devils...? Besides, places like the Bay Area, Colorado, Ohio, Minnesota, (lol) Atlanta, etc etc etc all had franchises that were lost due to attendance problems and the like, somehow bringing franchises back into those areas wasn't a complete impossibility.

>>140154
They do stuff like this during exhibition games. Most notably is that the Coyotes will usually play a game in Winnipeg. Dunno about the Avs or Hurricanes doing it but it would be awesome.

The Coyotes, of course, having NONE of these.

The Whalers attendence was about the same as every other serious non-contender in the NHL at the time.

I gave up watching Hockey when I couldn't go see my Whalers LIVE. Watching hockey on TV sucks.

I now live 5 miles from where the Florida Panthers play. NO one can afford to go see them stink the joint up.

FUCK THE NHL
>> Anonymous
>>139987
For a team that has sucked ass forever, the Blue Jackets do pretty well attendance-wise.
A 1000x better than Hartford would do.
>> Anonymous
Why is it impossible for Hartford to get a franchise again because the previous attempt failed? If that logic applied to the entire league there wouldn't be teams in Colorado, Ohio, Minnesota, Atlanta, the Bay Area...

The WORST seasons attendence in Hartford are heads and tails above the best seasons attendence for the Floriduh Panthers.

Protip: The Panthers used to sell out home games consecutively when they were located in downtown Miami (easily accessible by bus, train, and car)...since the Miami Arena wasn't really made to accomodate a hockey rink (also, it only held 15,000 people), Broward County successfully lobbied to have a large state-of-the-art arena built exclusively for the Panthers.

Only problem? Its in the middle of fucking nowhere. Its a mission and a half to get to the arena. Don't get me wrong, the arena is awesome, but its location really kills the Panthers attendance-wise. This is why you don't build an arena in the middle of the swamp.

The Panthers were selling out because they were good. Was another Wayne Huyzinga trick. Like the Marlins... build an awesome team then gut it and sell it.

It really sucks to be in South Florida and be a sports fan (originally a new englander). At least I get to see my Patriots once a year.

I choose the former.
