Liu Xiang - did the pressure kill him? McMurphy
I think it's weird that he got injured just when was about to do his heat.

Nobody has been more pressured than this guy to deliver the gold medal, and I believe he broke down due to the immense pressure.

Yeah, I just saw this and went like WTF.
>> Anonymous
wtf, why would he do that? seriously? if he was gonna fake it, why not fake it before the event?
>> McMurphy

Probably to prove that he was injured to the people. I'm not sure if they would accept a press release.

He succumbed to pressure.

He had injury issues coming into the event anyway. He clearly blew out his leg in the false start, you could see he was physically incapable of competing.

Leg injuries happen to sprinters all the fucking time. Someone in his position isn't going to succumb to pressure - You could clearly see he was having problems during his warm-up but he didn't remove himself from the race until he fuck up his leg for good in that false start. He was prepared to run despite his injury until it became an issue he couldn't simply ignore.

Get well soon Liu :3

i'm not buying that. what kind of an athlete doesn't want to compete at the olympics, at their home olympics?

Him. The amount of pressure and expectations were unequaled in the history of the Olympics.

The Chinese had already said that if he didn't win gold all his former achievements would be forgotten.

He was injured before that, it was well publicized that the injury was causing him pain during practices, but he said that he'd try to work through it. This was just the nail in the coffin.

Achilles injury in late May. His coach has said that it's been a chronic problem for years even before Athens.

The guy's got guts, trying to run even on his last connected tendon. His main American rival Terreance Trammell also DNF his first race, and that makes this his last Olympics. Pretty sad turn of events. Hope they both get well soon for their careers.

Yes it's a dutch site with dutch commentary but you can see it happen for anyone who missed it.

It was a hamstring injury that caused him to forfeit the game.

It must have been a tough situation for him, balancing time to heal and practice. The achilles that was injured is the foot that is required to push off and clear the hurdle so there was no avoiding the use of it.

Chinks are crazy if they think they were gonna beat a brotha.

Yeah my guess is that he was injured but the response from the Chinese team was

"NO! You have to race. 3.3 billion people are relying on you"

He ran fast in the warm-ups to the heat.

>Chinese officials later said that Liu's hamstring had healed, but that a foot problem -- apparently a bone spur pressing on his Achilles' tendon -- that had troubled him for six or seven years had reemerged just a week ago.

It was known way before the games even started that he was injured and would be unable to play. A belgian doctor that worked with the chinese atlets allready explained this to the belgian newspapers weeks before the games even started. He said that the guy didn't look good and that he had a big injury on his right leg's hamstring.

The chinese just pushed him to go to the games, even with his injury, so he just faked getting it while warming up and during that first faulse start, while in a fact he had it weeks before

The more I hear about him trying to push through that achilles injury and the hammy, even through warm ups is unbelievable. The pain on his face by just sitting in the blocks and giving it one last try shows how much character the guys got.

He was injured long before this Olympic. Remember that he was absent in the last two race?

Does that mean they'll put him to stud now?

Ms. Judo gold would be a good candidate
