Yes, you typically only care about a rivalry in your area (midwest, south, west coast, etc), but the reason the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry is such a big deal is because it's been so incredibly even, and the Big Ten conference title has been directly decided by the winner of the game 23 times. Plus they've played each other for over 100 years...yes, it's not the oldest rivalry, but it's one of them.

Some say it's a modern manifestation of the border dispute between Ohio and Michigan in the 1830's.

Also, a coach's career depends directly on how he does against Ohio State, that's how big of a deal it is. John Cooper consistently produced great teams in the 90's, but couldn't beat Carr to save his life...he got fired. Carr couldn't beat Tressel to save HIS life...he was told to resign.

Plus ESPN voted it the greatest sports rivalry of all time.

When I say "won't suck so hard," I'm talking about the future, not the past. As of right now, the Big Ten is really weak. Ohio State will be extremely good next year, Wisconsin and Penn State will be good, Illinois and Michigan State will be OK. I can't see Michigan doing well since they lost their entire offense and have a new coach (although they NEVER do TOO badly...), Minnesota and Northwestern both suck still...and I'm not sure about Iowa, but they haven't been good as of late.

Point is, we can't even hold a candle to the SEC, Big 12, or Pac-10, I'd say.

The Big 12 was good last year, but overall I'd say they're right on par with the big ten. 2 powerhouses, a couple good teams every year, and the rest is shit. I'd say the same about the Pac 10, except with only 1 true powerhouse, and cal oregon and ucla all sort of alternating having great years.
>> Anonymous

I'd say Arizona State is a pretty damn good team in the Pac 10 as well.

As for the Big 12...Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri should be good next year, plus Kansas had a good year last year...plus Oklahoma State is pretty good. I guess they're about on par with the Big Ten, but certainly get more respect.

Jesus Christ, why does everyone think that COLLEGE FOOTBALL could possibly have the biggest rivalry in sports? Who really cares about COLLEGE FOOTBALL? This is probably the most ludicrous thing in American sports. Foreigners can criticize football all they want, but caring about this shit really makes their criticism look legitimate. Come on, people. You're caring about a bunch of 18-22 year olds (or older if they're retarded) who can't even get paid for their talents yet.

Colleges shouldn't even be associated with sports teams, just make them a minor league or something. At least it'll mean something, then. Gee, wouldn't it be easier to attract the best players in the country by PAYING THEM MONEY instead of reducing the price they have to pay for an education? It just seems like such a silly, outdated association.

You're an idiot.

One of the reasons why I like college sports is exactly BECAUSE they don't pay their players. Sure they're young, but they're playing because they love the game. There's no bullshit about camp holdouts and contract negotiations and salary caps. All the nonsense with pro sports and the huge egos that accompany it are not an issue (or much less of one) in college. When was the last time a college player got as much press as TO or Barry Bonds?

Plus, in my opinion, college players play harder than pro players. Pros won't take as many risks because they know they're risking millions of dollars if they do. A lot of college players know it's their last shot at competitive sports and they play their asses off as a result.

I'm 90% sure you are a troll. But nonetheless...the fact that the players AREN'T paid makes it much more exciting. If you lose every game you play you'll still take home a massive paycheck...whereas in college, it could be your very career on the line. Instead of being drafted, many players actually care a lot about their school (Ohio State is the ONLY school future Heisman-winner Beanie Wells wanted to play for). Also, each individual game matters much more, because there is no playoff system (yet). If you lose one game late in the season, you're out of a championship run...unless, of course, you have a fucked up year like last year.

Also, college football is just plain more exciting to watch.

So, in conclusion...GO BUCKS! Let's make it 5 in a row.

But...yeah, Georgia-Auburn is better than that game, obviously. It's no OSU-Michigan though.

>>28066

It's an awesome game. But looking back at history, there are virtually NO upsets between the schools...basically, whoever is ranked higher will win. Granted, the rivalry is extremely even at 53-50-8, but one of the big reasons OSU-Michigan is a big deal is that no matter how good or bad the teams are, it's like the game is a new season. Between 1970 and 1975, Michigan entered the game undefeated and won only once. With Earl Bruce being fired for not being able to beat Michigan, Ohio State won his last game as a coach by upsetting the heavily favored Wolverines. In 1993, undefeated Ohio State was upset by the four-loss Michigan 28-0. Two years later, ANOTHER undefeated Ohio State team fell to the Wolverines. Then AGAIN #2 Ohio State fell to Michigan in 1996. Yeah, the 90's weren't great for the Buckeyes, which is why Cooper got fired. Then in 2004 the 6-4 Bucks beat the 9-1 Wolverines.

I think I made my point, you can find more examples like these.

I'd like to see Michigan do well so we look better when we beat them, at least. I don't really like Dick Rod so I hope he doesn't lead them to victory over us. After the Buckeye's drought under Cooper and the fact that we didn't even get a win until the 16th time the teams met, we've got some ground to make up, so it's OK with me if the games aren't close.
>> Anonymous
>>28140
Greatest implies some sort of importance, and this was the charge I was refuting. The Red River Rivalry has traditionally been a more important game, though the teams see winning it as the #2 goal, a National Championship being #1.

Around here, the mentality of Michigan/Ohio State is typically that of the "Aggie". If OSU beats OU or A&M beats Texas for their only win of the season, then it was a good year to them, and that is why they are in their current stations.
>> Anonymous
>>27831
Ha, I actually do go to a college, but surprise! I went there because I wanted to learn something. If I want to watch football...I can still go the games. It's really great, because in this case I can use college to learn, and enjoy the sport for its own sake. Just the fact that "the greatest rivalry in sports" can be associated with two college teams who hate each other. Seriously, when all your season is worth is "did we beat Ohio this year?", then you have a pretty shitty goal from the beginning. Why shouldn't a national championship be the ultimate goal of every sports team? And what if I'm not an athlete?

Why should I choose to go to a school because I'm a fan of their sports team, if my ultimate goal is to learn something in college? Seriously, that's like me going to school in New York City because I really love the Yankees and want to be able to subway into all the games. Why would you pay $20,000/yr for an education when your primary goal is to watch sports? "Experience the rivalry?" Watch real teams sometime. Sports shouldn't be about 80,000 drunken college kids yelling at games.

This anon. disagrees. The Michigan/Ohio State game is not between a major player and a minor player. Michigan and Ohio State are national level teams. I mean, yeah, they've been having bowl trouble in the past few years, but they both have national titles to their names in the past 15 years. Hell, OSU won it in 2002 (those bastards).

I would also disagree with you when you say that the red river shootout is more "important." The Michigan/OSU game is more often than not the game that determines who wins the Big 10 title and gets the best bowl game. And remember this: whenever michigan and OSU are in the hunt for the national title, they have to play one another. This is often the undoing of a team's title hopes (see 1968 for one of the best examples of this). So it's not like the No 1. goal is Win OSU GAME and no. 2 Goal is Win BCS--they're the same damn thing. If you don't win this game, there's no chance in hell of going to the BCS title.

I won't say that the Michigan/OSU game is the BIGGEST RIVALRY EVAR!!!!1!one11!! but I'll say it's certainly one of the most heated I've ever encountered and probably the most important in the region and absolutely the most important in the Big 10.

Also, I would point out that, yes. Michigan did lose 34-32 to a school in North Carolina named Appalachin state. They also beat a Florida team the first sophomore heisman winner.

I've lived in SEC West country for years before living in the Midwest, so I can't comment on Red River Shootout or anything in the SEC East, but tOSU Michigan is the biggest one I've seen in D-I. It really is a case where people lose their jobs over it, and teams/players are remembered based on their performance (Seriously, whenever someone brings up Mike Hart in either state now, they'll always say, "But he never wone against tOSU.")

That said, Army/Navy is probably the most exemplary rivalry, though probably not the biggest/most important.

Picking a "top" rivalry is doomed to failure anyway, because everybody knows that their team has the best one.

That said, it's gotta be Nebraska/Oklahoma for historical big XII (8?).
>> Anonymous
>>29572

Well, it all comes down to how you decide to label a team as having a national title. Most people do it by the Associated Press poll since there were some years where literally 4 different teams would be named national champions by different people...which would leave Ohio State with 5 titles. By these standards, Michigan shared the title with Notre Dame in 1947, won it outright in 1948, and won it again in 1997 (though ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll named Nebraska the champion).

But, that's all semantics anyway, I guess it really doesn't matter in the end.
>> Anonymous
>>29596
There are so many rivalries in the SEC no matter what you pick, at least ten teams will say you're wrong. Possibly more when Alabama is involved (Everybody hates 'bama). I went with the game that has decided the west every year but one in the past 5/6 and the closest rivalry year in, year out. Auburn's whooped 'bama 6 in a row, Georgia beat Florida for the first time in forever this year, Tennessee can't beat Florida, etc. I'd give Auburn/Georgia more credit, but both schools have at least two much more hated rivals. And LSU/Arkansas isn't a rivalry, it's just a game with a trophy.

Big East I'll admit not being particularly happy about, but since the big teams left the big east, there's not a lot of history to choose from, apart from teams where at least one of them is not currently relevant in the national discourse.

you are all stupid. ESPN does not hype this game up. Every year it is on ABC so everyone in the nation and world can watch it. I am a die hard Michigan fan and I was born and raised in Ohio. This is the best rivalry in the world, second is North Carolina Duke. If you say that no one outside the two states cares than why do you watch the game. Why is it the most watched collage game of the year every year. May be it is because football started in Ohio and this was the first collage rivalry ever. The best rivalry? It's up there, but I'd dispute that all day. It has significance, as they're two of the three decent teams in the Big 10 year in and out with Wisconsin (quiet Penn State, you're not that far removed from 2-9, or whatever). Auburn/Alabama is the nastiest rivalry, but it's in-state, so there's less national attention. Texas/Oklahoma is in the same league, the W/L is close and the games are nationally significant. Arkansas and Texas had what is my favorite rivalry until the breakup of the SWC, but now I lean towards Army/Navy. It lacks the importance of a national title shot on the line, but the records are close to even, the history is incredible, and it's a rivalry in the purest form.

I'm all for settling this debate through the evaluation of each school's cheerleaders.

Anyone got pics of those cheerleaders?

1. You have way too many typos.

2. Ohio State-Michigan isn't the oldest college football rivalry. Harvard-Yale is the oldest, if I'm not mistaken...and Army-Navy, Lehigh-Lafayette, and Texas-Texas A&M are older...and there are more examples.

3. It didn't start in Ohio. Modern football grew out of a match between McGill University of Montreal and Harvard University in 1874.

4. I think that Michigan will beat us sometime in the next three years (but not next year) because the sides usually even up, but I can't see Michigan dominating again like the 90's. Tressel is a fantastic coach, and his best games are against Michigan. And since we're talking about the spread, just you wait until we put Terrel Pryor on the spread.

Neither are worth mentioning...none of the hot girls do cheerleading up here.

If you're basing rivalries on that, try Georgia-Florida. You won't be disappointed.

I can't speak for our cheerleaders...but we DO have Raven Riley. So judge for yourself.

Even the Michigan men are hotter than the Ohio State women. Plus they look like they're having fun, instead of being forced (most likely at gunpoint) to stay still and smile.

Except for that fat guy near the back. The only thing that makes him smile is a bucket of bacon. Shit, I'm not even that fat.

Well the Michigan picture is more informal, the Ohio State one is obviously a group picture that they set up. That's a stupid argument.

And like I said, all the hot girls 'round these parts don't do cheerleading. It's weird.

If Terrelle Pryor goes to Ohio State, Michigan will be fucked. They don't have a quarterback. I can't really see Pryor going to OSU over UM because of Rodriguez' new offense. But seeing where WVU is now makes me a happy wolverinefag.

I'm also a bluefag, but I really think it's pointless to argue about which school Pryor goes to. God knows I want him to come to Michigan, but nobody knows what the blue fuck he's doing, so it's kinda pointless to speculate.

Well, first off, he decided he was going to Ohio State initially, but his dad told him to wait and think things through first...he wanted him to look at Penn State. Then he visited West Virginia and liked Dick Rod, who then went to Michigan.

So, I'll put it this way...look at what happened to Troy Smith. The same thing would happen with Pryor. He isn't great at passing yet...neither was Smith. If Pryor came here, he could spend a year under Boeckman (a hell of a pocket passer) and learn how to throw the ball, and he'll even get some playing time...maybe do a Florida-style dual quarterback thing. Then he could start the last three years of his college career. He already has all the tools he would need for a solid team here, whereas Michigan is pretty much starting from scratch.

I'd be shocked if he didn't come to Ohio State.

Plus you guys drooling over this guy... Are you guys forgetting he might suck? ala Kyle Wright Xaiver Lee and countless others?

If he sucks, we still have Henton at Ohio State. I haven't seen him play much, but he was really fast when I saw him play at the spring game last year.

not really drooling, just realize what an athletic QB like Pryor could do in an offense of Rodriguez. I'm not sure about David Cone. Wish Ryan Mallett wouldn't have left and at least gave the spread a try. I'm sure there was more to his departure than that though. alliteration fucking flaming fags fail forever. This thread is now always about alliteration.

How about Wyatt Sexton? The FSU QB that was arrested because he was in the middle of the street in his shorts claiming he was the son of god. Haha. Epic. Fail.
