eurofag here with a question

before I even begin, I did not make this thread for the intention of it turning into a shitstorm sport vs. sport thread so please leave that out of here

anyway, I was bored the other day and decided to read up on american sports. how they work, how they're played, etc etc. One thing confuses me: the "playoffs"

if you go through the regular season in first place, then lose in the first round of the playoffs you're not deemed the champion. But okay so you might be considered the champion of your "division" but who ever remembers division champions?? i dunno about you only the super bowl winner is what people remember

In the EPL for example, there is one league table from top to bottom with ALL teams, and the team that wins the most games and loses the least is considered the champion. simple. But in American sports if your team does bad in the regular season but has a lucky run in the playoffs they're deemed the champions.

so my question: what is the point and logic of the playoffs? how can the team that has won the most games but unluckily loses in the playoffs not be considered the champions? i don't really agree with that or find any logic in it. Can someone enlighten me? am I missing something?

So eurofag sports don't have playoffs? I never knew that. Another reason why eurosports suck

Right because your entire season should be judged on one game. "Playoffs' are retarded, most leagues don't have them. Most cup competitions have knockout rounds anyway so whatever, same thing.

If a team is honestly the best team, they wouldn't lose in the playoffs.

Think of it this way: the regular season is nothing more than a long qualifying round for a tournament.

Just take a look at your international soccer tournaments.

Team goes 3-0 in the pool? Fuck that, they're losing in the quarterfinals, and people love that.

Playoffs are just grander versions of that.

Not every team gets into the playoffs. Only the best teams do (What do you think they play the regular season for?) . And then they have to duke out to decide the champions. Its like the best teams in the league get placed into a tournament at the end of the regular season. Because otherwise, what if one team plays a whole bunch of shitty teams all season?

They have play-off style cup competitions running side-by-side with the standard league.

Champions League from the last 16 is essentially a play-off between the best in Europe

AAAHHH the playoffs, when players take their game to another level. Love em.

18-1

The regular season is just that, the regular season. The playoffs are basically an elimination tournament of the teams that played the best in the regular season.

People celebrate making it to the playoffs as it shows that your team is in the elite group of teams.

Well the thing is the intensity and level of play really increases during playoffs... because there is really a sense of urgency teams have to really come together and put their best games out there every night or else they're done. That is the beauty of playoffs my friend, the higher level of play and the guts and glory of seeing a zero become a hero!

Its not decided on one game. It's decided on your record at the end of the regular season, then you have to win at least two games in the playoffs to advance to the championship game. Is that to complicated for you?

See: College football (in b4 some 1-AA faggot says fbs)

Playoffs are the only true way to determine who the best team is.

by the way the fact that in 16 years only 4 teams have won a title makes EPL shit

Oh it kind of is decided on one game. You know.. the final? Championship game?

I don't understand why games here don't have separate competitions as well.

I'll only speak for the NFL cause it seems like that was what you based your question on.

In the NFL not every team can play every other team. Because of the up and down nature of the quality of NFL teams, it is entirely possible for a very good team to play alot of mediocre or bad teams during their season. The Patriots this season being the prime example. They have what's called an easy schedule.

Also, it's possible for two or more teams to finish with the same record in the NFL (and several other sports as well). How do you determine the champion if you have 6 teams with a league best 12-4 record?

Have a playoff. Single game of best or series, either way, it settles it once and for all.

I guess technically it is all decided on that one game, but it took 16 regular season games and three straight wins (or two, depending on how your seeded) to get to that all important game.

But thats only true for the NFL. In baseball, basketball, and hockey the final two teams are decided in a best of seven series.

>>You know.. the final? Championship game?

Yes, because no soccer/football championships are decided by a single game.

America is two big to have a normal functioning league. 2 games (one home/one away) would be the best way to decide it. There is no two ways about that. But that'd mean 64 games a season in the NFL, one game a week and that's more than a year. So you could break it into north/south or east/west, but then you've only won half of the country, and it could be argued the one side of the country has better teams than the other. That or a two tier promotion/relegation which would be hard to implement based on the current set up, and is something the Americans just don't do.

Right. That's why they have multiple competitions. The LEAGUE title however should always go to whoever has the best record in the... league.

>>321102

That is true, I wasn't considering the size of the US. It would be much harder to have every team play against each other.

Forgot to add. Think of American leagues more like how nation sides in sports like WC in football, and rugby are decided, or the Euros. Qualifier to group stage to knock out.

The regular season is the group stage, the play-offs are the knock-outs.

Keep in mind that three of the four major sports in the US (Baseball, Hockey, Basketball) all do best-of-seven series during the playoffs.

I have to commend OP on actually reading up on American sports, rather than just knock them without knowing anything about them like most eurofags do.

>>how can the team that has won the most games but unluckily loses in the playoffs not be considered the champions?

FAIL.

best record =/= best team

There could be shit teams in your division and/or conference that are easy to run over. And even if there's not how can you call yourself the best team when you can't play to the best when it's most needed? And why is it luck when a team with a worse record loses? Sometimes teams just get outplayed (which once again, if this happens you don't deserve to be called the best team).

The playoff system works best. After the regular season get several of the top teams together throw them against each other.

If football had to do a best of seven Superbowl the league would shit a brick. Football is more punishing than any of the other games. Sinple fact. You just can't play football like that.

I always hate, at the end of the soccer season, when there isn't even any reason to watch anymore.

MLS is superior

i call troll on OP, just because this competion set up is used in tons of sports.

(From an Englishman's view) End of the season is shit if you're Spurs or Newcastle fan.. But for the teams at the top and the very bottom it can be truely epic. Two points between Chelsea and United this season... That's over looking Fulham's return from the dead. 2-0 down and relegated against Manchester City at half time. Only to go on and fight their way to survival over the next few games. West Ham the year before that. Also UEFA Cup spots may not seem that much, but are worth millions to the clubs that can get them.

Champions League final (which is kinda like the Superbowl) at the end of the season = epic.. especially in 99 and 05. Major domestic Cup finals.

Whether it's 18-1 or Barnsley beating Liverpool and Chelsea... Who doesn't love cup upsets?

>>321194
So how do they decide who's in the Champions league final game then?
