The best thing to do is to just lay back and not ask questions.

Well, back before Buttman, there was the Wales and Campbell conferences. And Buttman in all his infinite wisdom (lulz), decided that the league should have geographical divisions/conferences based on location. Some teams are still in certain conferences mainly because of rivilaries. Which is why the Penguins are still in the Atlantic (the whole Philly/Pittsburgh state rivialry), even though they are in Western Pennsylvania.

However, if there ever happens to be an addition of new teams or to balance out teams, Detroit has some sort of stipulation that will allow them to move to the East.

>31420
Toronto was still in the West due to the renaming of the conferences, but moved like, 5 years later, after teams were added to the west.
>> Anonymous
>>31458
Oh, Buttman how wise is he! But look, you play teams in your Conference 4-5 games a year, Division is 8 games, I mean, what the fuck is the deal with teams not playing every other club in the league?
>> Anonymous
>>31479
The league is setup to play everyone once starting 2008-2009. So if you have season tickets, you'll get to see Team X every other year.

The D/FW teams, apart from the Mavericks, are well out of place. Consider: The Ballpark and Arlington and the new Cowboys Stadium are going to be neighbors.

The Rangers are in the AL West. The Cowboys are in the NFC East.

Consider the Mavericks and the Stars. They share an arena, and yet the Mavericks are in the Southwest division while the Stars are in the Pacific division. wtf.

This is OP.

I suppose I should have prefaced my statements by saying the only reason I'm confused/pissed about this is because this means the wings will have to travel to California and back and such shit while the Eastern teams stay in the same timezone. This is crap.

>>31442
Technically, toronto is on the north american continent...

I once heard somebody mention splitting the NHL horizontally, creating a North and a South conference, more or less like the pic here. (Yes, I realize that the line isn't straight, but Pitt and Philly are damn near parallel, so one of them had to go south.

Thoughts?
>> Anonymous
>>31494

The North would damn near oblertiate anything from the south in the finals.
>> Anonymous
>>31494

Yea, all that travel really seems to be hurting them this season.

Playing in California is ALOT worse, since the majority of teams are in the east. Every trip is a long trip.
>> Anonymous
>>31494
This is a horrible idea soley because of the fact that it'd be "good teams" vs the SE division. Do you seriously want to see a team like the Thrashers in the finals? I know I don't.
>> Anonymous
>>31540
tell that to the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning and 2006 Carolina Hurricanes
>> Anonymous
>>31547
I didn't want them in the finals then and I don't want them in the finals again. SE division is a fucking joke.
>> Anonymous
>>31547

Tampa fail coasted to the finals; if the leafs made it they would've destroyed them. Drawing The islanders, canadians and a tired flyers squad didn't hurt their chances either.

Edmonton lost their starting goaltender during the first game of the finals.

Theres a reason why only 1 SE team usually makes it to the playoffs. SHITTY CONFERENCE!
>> Anonymous
>>3152
You think so? I mean, the SE isn't great, but the Capitals are getting better, the Ducks, Sharks and stars would be in the south. Anyways, the last few cup winners have all been "southern" teams...Ducks, 'Canes, and before the lockout the Lightning.

The last northern team to win it was the Devils in 2003.
>> Anonymous
80 plus years of the NHLz

2 cups for the Southeast. 15 for Atlantic. Anyone wanna count Northeast?
>> Anonymous
>>32805

Well take into consideration that most of the southern teams aren't that old (the ducks were started in 94, I think, and most of the others not soon before that).

Anyways, I wasn't saying that the south has been the best ever, only that in today's hockey, even non-hockey market teams have legitimate shots at the cup.

I mean, think about it this way: one of the reasons the playoffs are as awesome as they are is because you never know WHO will win once it starts. Look at Edmonton going to the finals 2 years ago. Nobody gave them a snowballs chance in hell. Do you really want to know who's going to win the Cup before the season even starts?

That'd be so NCAAF (any year besides the last one)
