Soccer is short for "association football" which is its full name. Somehow over the years soccer went from being pronounced "so-sher" to "sock-her." once "association football" became "soccer" it opened the door for the new invention of American football to be plain "football."

Soccer Football came first you dumbass.
American Football kept the "Football" portion of "Rugby Football", the game American football came from.

Football came first. The official name of the sport is Association Football. Soccer is derived from the word association and was part of the English lexicon before it was part of the American. However it makes sense for Americans on a national level to call it soccer more because Gridiron Football more popular. (this also applies to Australia where AFL is more popular)
