Have you seen Peyton play lately? He's not bad but he can't lead his team anymore. He can't seem to call plays. At one point earlier this season I saw him take two timeouts and a delay of game penalty all in a row because he was somehow unable to convey to his offense what they were supposed to do.

>> HKK !h7MHU9L/Oo
>>407031

Well, if you're into basic counting numbers like homers and RBI's, yeah he's one of the greatest but if you look at the other numbers it's a different story. His OPS+ is 22nd all time and his regular OPS is 38th all time. Those aren't bad spots but they're not Babe Ruth or Ted Williams level either. On top of that his career OBP is 219th all-time behind guys like Chuck Knoblauch and Will Clark of all people. He wasn't ever that great of defensive player either. The only reason that Aaron ended up with the Home Run and RBI records is because he had the second most at-bats in the history of baseball, thus more opportunities. He's by no means a bad player but I can think of at least 15 guys I'd take over him.

Varitek is constantly getting voted into All-Star games despite being a horrible hitter and I don't know how long Red Sox Nation have been raving over the fact that he's the team captain as if that somehow makes him better than other catchers.

Papelbon has been called the best closer in baseball by the bandwagoners for the past couple of seasons when in reality he's not even the best closer in his division.

Youkilis, ESPN has been giving him MVP hype and recently one of them said he had a better season than A-Rod which is just beyond retarded.

Lefty Grove won more ERA titles than anyone in history and played during Ruth's time. He also faced Walter Johnson during the last years of Johnson's career. The average league ERA back then was around 3.85. Yes, there were great pitchers during Aaron's era like Gibson but if Aaron were truly on Ruth's level he would have dominated them like Ruth did with the pitchers of his era.

godamn you are fucking retarded as shit.

Do you realize any of the following:
bats were smaller then. So were baseballs.
pitchers mound was closer then.
there were no developed pitches then, fb, cb, change.

my high school played our home games on the same field Ruth used to practice on in St Pete. When I was 15 I could hit a HR there. The fields were smaller. The pitching weaker.

Albert Pujols, Frank Thomas and Manny Ramirez all have career OPS+es equal to or greater than Hank Aaron's, and I'm willing to bet that they've had to face a wider variety of pitches than Aaron.

Several pitchers used things beside Fastball, Curveball and Change-Up back then. Ever heard of a Spitball? Yeah, that was thrown frequently during Ruth's era. The Knuckleball was far more common back then as well. And the parks were bigger back then too.

maybe that has to do with a half-new offensive line rather than peyton.
>> Kilgamayan !2BklmILFiE
>>407197

Fielding percentage is worthless because

- Error scoring is somewhat subjective
- Players have to be able to GET to a ball to make an error (Easy example: I'd rather have an Ian Kinsler that boots 50% of the grounders he has to go into an all-out dive for than a Jeff Kent who won't even sniff any of said grounders)

In terms of outfielders, Zone Rating would probably be a good place to start. I know +/- is the best defensive saber out there for infielders but I don't know about outfielders. I'll ask around.
