Despite the scandals, the best Olympics so far IMO.

Especially in Running, Swimming and Gymnastics.
>> Anonymous
its because you're 14 and can only remeber one other Olympics (Athens) which was total fail.

also, sydney was best imo
>> Anonymous
If I completely fucking ignore China and their faggotry, then I agree. Records in swimming and running being broken like they were nothing.

I've only seen 4 total Olympics, though.

Dynamite opening ceremony, as well.

Hello, Los Angeles?

we fucking owned that one

One of the greatest moments in Canadian Olympic history. Sydney triathlon, fuck yeah!

Of course the US owned that one, the Soviet Bloc boycotted it.
>> Anonymous
It's been the most entertaining overall for me, so I'll agree.
>> Anonymous
Each one will seem better than the last one since its so far apart.

But Athens was garbage, and I've been watching since Atlanta.

Pretty much everything about this Olympics is the best in my memory. This is also one of the most talked about in history, considering the air pollution, human rights issues and, of course, the whole Tibet thing. Never before do I recall such anticipation for an Olympics. And boy, did they deliver. There's just something magical about them being somewhere far off like Beijing. The facilities are fucking awesome, as well. But anyway, the actual events themselves were really great. The Opening Ceremony was spectacular and the Closing Ceremony is looking to be similarly cool. I've never been as excited during an Olympic event than I was for Michael Phelps, who really kicked the whole thing off with a bang. 7 world records, 8 gold medals, holy shit. Then there was the women's gymnastics, which brought the lovely Nastia, Shawn and Alicia to my attention, and they were also extremely fun to watch. Even the men's gymnastics were cool. Then there were both Beach Volleyball events, where the US owned. Over in the Bird's Nest we got to see Usain Bolt become the fastest man in the world. I'm actually quite sad it's drawing to a close, just like I was sad when the last swimming event ended or when the last medal was handed out in gymnastics. All the most fun events are over, so now I guess we wait until 2012, where London has big shoes to fill.
What was also great about this Olympics was that all the /sp/ortsmen could watch together in real-time, along with the /b/tards and the /mu/tants and all of 4chan. Also, I watched most of the games with IRL friends, which made it all the more fun.

The earliest games I can remember are Barcelona. China might have had the better opening ceremony overall, but nothing will ever come close to the Barca Archer lighting the torch. Also, my personal favorite was the Atlanta games, but I might be a bit biased there seeing how I was born and raised in Athens GA. Downtown Athens, Summer of 96 = one the most exciting times of my life (that had nothing to do with sex anyway).

i only remember athens slightly and dont even fucking remember the sydney olympics
>> Anonymous
>>284326
Compared to this, Sydney just wasn't as good. It's mostly because of the Phelpshark, Usain Bolt, the gymnastics team and the internet.

Australian here. Fucking shithouse games.

tl; dr that's a really well written write up of why this year was good.

What? Single athletes dominating sports sucks shit, it's a foregone conclusion and the media fappery's irritating.

>>284411

Oh have a gold fucking star, Sherlock, we've had a very crappy Olympics this year
>> Anonymous
The London Olympics are gonna suck. I hate Britain.

>Single athletes dominating sports sucks shit
No. It's awesome.

I watch USA basketball just so I can watch aggressive niggers beat the shit out of delicate eurofaggots. I don't even like African Tree-Hockey. The total domination is appealing.
>> Anonymous
Yeah, this year's was pretty good. I still like Atlanta tho. Michael fucking Johnson, USA women's gymnastics, etc.

>>284390
Vancouverfag here. Self-entitled natives fucking STOLE THE OLYMPIC FLAG FROM CITY HALL AND HELD IT AT RANSOM. The amount of anti-Olympic sentiment here is insane. I usually prefer the winter games to the summer ones, but 2010 is going to be a complete fucking mess.

Oh, and they intend to light the Olympic flame INSIDE an enclosed-dome stadium and still haven't figured out how they'll do it without turning BC Place into a carbon-monoxide deathtrap.

Do you find entertainment in string too? That's like me spoiling the plot of a book to you, then you read it anyway and try to pretend to wet yourself over the shitstorm of the TWEEST ending.
>> Anonymous
>>284454
I don't read shitty literature, so ruining the ending is irrelevant.

It's about the journey, not the destination.

Ah right, admitting you don't even read really boosts the intellectual authority of your statement
>> Anonymous
>>284486
You know, you can predict an ending to a book that's well written.

You wouldn't know anything about that, though. Judging from your immaturity.

Eh, Phelps had 3 amazing races where it was too close to call. Pretty exciting imo
>> Anonymous

Ah yes, the guy who takes pleasure in the athletic equivalent of bullying deems the person who, gasp, READS as immature.

atlanta was good so was barcelona and sydney, but christ wtf happened in athens it was so shitty, for a while i thought maybe it was cause i was getting old but yeah beijing proved that wrong.

And yet /sp/ masturbates furiously to a basketball game between the US and Greece as though an all-star team winning a game against players who might as well be in high schoolers is anything resembling an 'accomplishment'.

I can beat a five-year-old at arm-wrestling, where's my medal?
>> Anonymous
>>284438
Yeah, I heard about that flag thing... sucks. I like Canada, and I'm surprised that anyone actually took the time to read that. But I do agree that I'm just not looking forward to 2010 very much, IDK why.
>> Anonymous
Yeah, you know, these games just kind of came like a bolt of awesome out of nowhere.

>>284390
i prefer summer too. not sure if the games or more interesting or because I have more time in the summer to get into the Olympics.

ROFL

so phelps is being mean to the other swimmers? should he stay after the olympics and clean up the pool? will his parents get a note?
>> Anonymous
>>284537
>I interpret all words literally

You really love digging that hole, don't you?
>> Anonymous
Aside from the endless butthurt amerifag bawwwwwiing, it was pretty good.
>> Anonymous
how many of you watched all of phelps' races?

some of them were very, very close, which makes them even more exciting than any single tight race because there was even more on the line.
>> Anonymous
>>284549
I'm not the guy you've been arguing with, I just thought that analogy was hilarious

>so phelps is being mean to the other swimmers? should he stay after the olympics and clean up the pool? will his parents get a note?

I'm sure that the staff at the Water Cube would be VERY appreciative of the gesture.

The only people who don't like one sided beat-downs are people who often are on the receiving end of one.
>> Anonymous
>>284554
The ones that were actually close were fine. If anything I give kudos to the French relay team for having the balls to spice things up in that regard, silver medal nowithstanding. But even as a swimmer I couldn't watch the ones where he was swimming as though he was competing against the Special Olympics; like Lance Armstrong's last few TdF wins, it was just so predictable it was a waste of my time sitting there to watch him do it.
>> Anonymous
this olympic's lighting of the torch was stupid.

barcelona's (1992) will never be beat.

I still say that's one of the coolest things I've ever seen and if you look carefully, it was windy too.
>> Anonymous
>>284925
how can barcelona come after beijing... people enjoyed watching some dude pretending to fly?
>> Anonymous
>>285006
addendum: i'd rather watch an archer pretend to shoot a flaming arrow into a cauldron than an old chinese guy pretending to fly
>> Anonymous
>>284900
IF they already had the natural gas pumping out of the cauldron, seems like having the flame pass over it would be enough for it to ignite. Dependant on wind, of course
>> Anonymous
>>285010
That was pretend? Why couldn't they do it for real?
>> Anonymous
>>285042
risk factor of missing and hitting someone? dunno

It wasn't pretend. Watch the video. It was one of the most breathtaking things I ever saw when I watched it live.

Dependant on this.
>> Anonymous
>>285042
From his distance it would be impossible for him to land the arrow into the cauldron without aiming straight up, at which point wind and raw human error makes it exceedingly likely that he'd be shooting a flaming arrow into the crowd.
>> Anonymous
>>285049
the arrow did fly over the cauldron but it definitely wasnt the thing igniting it -- watch the video

watch this

sorry to break it to your . it wasnt even close. it would be funny if sum1 got hit by the arrow.

HEY GUYS, THAT FLYING DUDE FROM THE BEIJING OPENING CEREMONIES WASN'T FLYING AT ALL, HE WAS ON WIRES! WHAT KIND OF CHEAP SHIT IS THAT?!
