I'm told these posts should be generating reader response, so let's start off with a topic that's sure to overflow the reply section of this page.

There has been plenty of MVP talk. Kevin Garnett. LeBron James. Chris Paul. And our pick, Kobe Bryant. But winning the MVP doesn't mean you're the best player in the NBA.

Karl Malone was the MVP in 1997 and 1999. Allen Iverson was the MVP in 2001. Steve Nash was the MVP in 2005 and 2006. Dirk Nowitzki was the NBA in 2007. None was ever the best player in the NBA, not even in his MVP season.

I'm sure you're all riled up now. But before you launch into a Milleresque rant, read on.

This is how you determine the best player in the NBA: On the opening day of training camp, every player is a declared a free agent. You have no salary cap concerns and own the first selection. The goal - the only goal that truly matters - is to hold aloft "The Larry" in mid-June.

Whom do you pick?

Since Michael Jordan walked away from the Chicago Bulls after the 1997-98 season, the only players I have even considered as the answer to this question are Tim Duncan and Shaquille O'Neal.

During their decade of dominance, no player has made his teammates consistently better than Duncan. And no player has "distorted the game" through strategy and legislation more than O'Neal.

No doubt Duncan is the best power forward of all time. He has performed well ever since he's come into the NBA.

Shaq, on the other hand, was a beast when he was younger. Now, he's old and getting rusty, but he's still a great player to have on a team.

Shaq needs to retire, all I remember is this big nigger who can't shoot can't play defense, foul out before the first quarter ends and can't shoot.

Tim Duncan has at least 2-3 more years before he start sucking ass. So I pick CP3.

You mean first player that should be chosen at this very moment?

Well...there aren't many good big men in the NBA, so priority should be placed on the bigs.
Oneal is fat, slow, lazy, cant shoot free-throws...
Duncan is boring; also he shows signs of aging.
Howard seems to get 20/20s every game. Get Howard.

howard doesn't have a mid range jump shot, all he do is dunk. maybe greg oden i know he hasn't step on the court yet, but you know hes going to average 20/10 next year.

>Before you begin your rebuttal argument, consider this: Since Jordan's second retirement, either Duncan or O'Neal has been a part of every NBA Finals. Combined, they are a tidy 8-1, with O'Neal's loss to Detroit in 2004 the only blemish.

uh, Kobe was a part of some of Shaq's rings. Shit, I do believe you made a point worth making. The worst part is I am an AZfag, Shaq looks kinda close to fail. MY GOD MY FRANCHISE IS CURSED - see, coin flip for Jabbar, see triple ot in 76 (77?), see Jordan punking Suns. See Suns blowing 3-1 leads v. Rockets, See Danny Manning blowing out his knee AGAIN in a good Barkley year. See Robert Horry Hip Checking...

Fuck the Cubs, the Suns are most cursed. Also, the Suns need to beat the Spurs to get eventually to SUns v. Lakers, Kobe v. Shaq. But The Big Fun, will stop that. The only good thing is that the DBacks are not cursed, otherwise being azfag would be the worst.

if it was just ot win in the next season, I would take duncan and then draft pieces to compliment him. i would take the best available PG next and then best available SG.

It would depend on how the draft would be set up. Assuming it would use the same amount of teams and the order would remain the same in every round, Then I would need to grab Kobe first. He can defend most guys and he is the best offensive player in the game. If it was for just one year then I might go with Duncan second overall. I would also strongly consider Sheed. He is the most overlooked player in the game. But by choosing Kobe first, you could get a very nice PF or C second and not have such a pressing need for a PG or SF. If you were to go with Duncan first you would NEED a PG to handle the ball second.
