John Elway Helps McCain Kick Off Colo. Swing Michael Abramowitz Washington Post Staff Writer
It's no surprise that John McCain turned to former Denver Bronco great John Elway to help him kick off his campaign swing today though Colorado. "I know a thing or two about comebacks," said Elway, famous for his fourth-quarter heroics, in introducing McCain this morning to several thousand raucous partisans in a sports arena here.

McCain is looking for any edge he can get in his battle to hold onto this crucial swing state, where polls suggest he is trailing Barack Obama by five or six points. After the speech, Elway and his former teammate John Lynch, who also spoke on behalf of McCain, boarded McCain's Straight Talk Air plane to accompany the candidate to his next stop in Colorado Springs.

In a brief interview on the tarmac, Elway said he first met McCain four or five years ago and recently told him he would help McCain any way he could in Colorado. "I like what he's about," Elway said, describing McCain as "a guy who's had the experience. He's totally an American. I believe he's going to be the guy who will change us around and get us going in the right direction."

Elway said he was absolutely confident McCain could stage his own fourth-quarter comeback. "Until we get to that vote November 4, I don't care what the polls say," he said, saying the race was closer than the polls suggest. "I think he needs a field goal," Elway said. "That's all he needs. He needs a field goal."

Judging from his speech this morning, McCain plans to keep hammering away against Obama on taxes, spending -- and the question of whether he is ready to become commander in chief, the subject of a new McCain campaign ad this morning.

"Senator Obama said yesterday that if you want to know how he would respond in a crisis, look what he's done during his campaign," McCain said. "But we've seen the wrong response from him over and over during this campaign."

McCain noted that Obama "opposed the surge strategy that is bringing us victory in Iraq and will bring us victory in Afghanistan," continuing, "He said he would sit down unconditionally with the world's worst dictators. When Russia invaded Georgia, Senator Obama said the invaded country should show restraint. He's been wrong on all of these."

McCain also picked up on new reports of rising foreclosures to sharpen his critique of the administration and Congress for not moving fast enough to help struggling homeowners. McCain wants the federal government to spend up to $300 billion to buy up bad mortgages and give homeowners a break, and this morning he appeared to refer to reports that the federal government may start guaranteeing home mortgages.

"Finally Congress and the Administration are putting together a plan to address this problem," McCain said. "Let me say: It's about time."

McCain's speech was briefly disrupted by a handful of protesters shouting. It was not immediately clear what they were protesting, and the crowd shouted them down by chanting "USA! USA!" McCain thought they were complaining about the Iraq war, so he reprised his standard line: "We'll bring our troops home, my friends, but we will bring them home in honor and victory, my friends, unlike how perennial Superbowl doormat Elway brought the Broncos home year after year"

But when police led the protesters out peacefully a few minutes later, it turned out two were in wheelchairs, and they were calling for McCain to support directing Medicaid funds to alternative living options for the disabled.
