An advantage for younger gymnasts is that they are lighter and, often, more fearless when they perform difficult maneuvers, said Nellie Kim, a five-time Olympic gold medalist for the former Soviet Union who is now the president of the women’s technical committee for the Swiss-based International Gymnastics Federation.

“It’s easier to do tricks,” Kim said. “And psychologically, I think they worry less.”

China wants their gold medals, and they'll do anything to get it, whatever the cost.

This is their way of trying to impress the international community.

What china doesn't understand is that we, the international community, don't really ask for much.

We only want honesty.

you are an idiot. Gymnastics is all about pliability. When you are young, when your muscles are still growing and adjusting, you are extremely pliable and flexible.

This means younger girls have a distinct advantage over older girls in gymnastics. Stop being retarded and saying shit like "USA GOT BEAT BY LITTLE GIRLS THEY DESERVE TO LOSE"
>> Anonymous
>>248575

It was a mistake, but that was the judges fault. If I remember correctly they already had the ceremony in which they gave him a gold medal only to turn around the next day and say sorry can I have that back?
>> Anonymous
>>248568
No, because the IOC decided that they couldn't change the results after the event was over and neither he nor the USOC wanted to give it back. (Because he'd "earned" it.)
>> Anonymous
>>248596
and if i remember correctly he didn't deserve a gold medal and refused to return it just so he doesnt look like a goddamn loser.
>> Anonymous

Youth in gymnastics is more of an advantage than most other sports especially since -.10 is the difference between win and fail
>> Anonymous
>>248614
Isn't it just female gymnastics though? I know the male gymnasts are generally better when they're older.
>> Anonymous
>>248621

Diving and figure skating, too. Men's gymnastics not so much, since some events (notably rings) require developed upper body strength.

As to the Hamm thing, it's the judges fault for fucking it up. While Hamm is sort of an ass for not returning the medal, he has every right to keep it. It's not his mistake.
>> Anonymous
>>248647
how is it not his mistake? He was outperformed by a better gymnast and refused to admit it
>> Anonymous
>>248662

It was a judging error that screwed the Korean dude over. The Koreans delayed in reporting the error until after the series, not after the event in question. -If- they had changed it before the final rotation, Hamm would have had a chance to alter his routine.

I'm not saying what Hamm did was sporting (and indeed, I personally think he should have given it back), but he was well within his rights to keep it.

I can understand how being younger can be a physyical advantage, but I don't see how psychologically can be relevant to a sport. What a dumb cunt.
>> Anonymous
>>248910

I don't thing any of us can accurately predict the pressure of Olympic competition, so I would sort of take the advice of people who have seriously.

Having said that, I would guess it's a frame of mind of understanding that this is the pinnacle of the sport, etc etc. And probably a bit about: I'm getting old, and this will probably be the last shot I've got so I better not fuck up.
>> Black ? Star !x8ngkAZjXE
>>248910

Don't you remember when you were younger how you did stupid things because you didn't realize how stupid they were?

With being so young comes a certain ignorance and relief from pressure. Though the psychological impact is far less than the physical benefits of being young.
>> Anonymous
>>248947
not in sports wtf? Have you even played a sport in HS
>> Anonymous
C: As the Games draw near, is the training adjusted? For example, do you have any psychological training for the young female gymnasts who are under more pressure than the men?

GJ: Psychological pressure is one problem that has to be dealt with in many other events, like figure skating, diving and shooting. We have some experience in this field. A good coach is also a wonderful psychologist. Training such as psychological guidance and suggestions are part of the daily routine.
>> Anonymous
I remember reading once a Chinese gymnast credited her victory to the psychological training she'd done.

I've tried it before. It's this neat little piece that clips lightly to your ear, monitors your pulse and such.

There's games that go with it.

I guess they have down what a focused/meditative state is,

so like there's one where there's a barren tree, and you have to maintain a state of calm focus to make it grow

it's pretty awesome
>> Anonymous
>>248709
The FIG admitted the judges were wrong, but then said that if the Koreans wanted to challenge it they shouldn't have waited until the event was over.
>> Anonymous

What stops an athlete that is over 16 being lighter than the average 14 year old trainee?
