Amerifag here with questions about Premier League. Is there a final game, or is it just a point system where whoever has the most points at the end wins? I'm confused. Tournament system? What's goin' on with that. I'm not trying to bash the system or anything, I just need help understanding what's going on with that.

And some other questions. How long is a season, how many games (matches)? I heard Man U won. Is that good?

Is there a draft after the season?

NO

Top 2 teams qualify for the Champions League Group Stages (next season), 3rd and 4th placed teams qualify for the qualifying rounds of the Champions Leage. 5th place team qualifies for the UEFA Cup. 18th, 19th, and 20th placed teams are relegated from the premier league to the Championship (next lower division). There's no draft because reward shit teams for playing badly is gay.

The CL is the a group + knockout competition that's the most prestigious in Europe. The UEFA Cup is for loser teams that can't get in the CL.

Also, Champions League and UEFA Cup are not post-season, they run in parallel to the next season for the qualifying teams. e.g. next season a team in the CL will play thus most weeks: Weekend: Prem League game. Tuesday Wednesday: Champions League game. etc. Interspersed in all of this on some weekends or weeks are the domestic cup games.

Also Man Utd are the equivalent of the NY Yankees, so them winning is shit for everyone except their own fans.

Op here. This all sounds complicated. Please keep in mind that I'm only use to American sports.

So this whole UEFA is a joke eh?

Just read up on the history of Man U. Sounds like they were complete shit until the 90's. That would make the the New England Patriots of Euro-Football.

So is the CL the "Big one"?

think about it this way

CL - NCAA Tournament
UEFA Cup - NIT Tournament

Aww shit.. now it all makes sense. That's horrible. No wonder why Championship League games are broadcasted here and I never heard of UEFA in my life.

Ok, couple more questions:

Who's "THE MAN" right now? Like, the best player around in the world (or at least in Europe). I know it's open to debate (like other sports). Just give me a top 5 list or somethin'.
>> Anonymous
>>98423
cristiano ronaldo, not really up for debate as his only real rival has been injured for half the season. everyone hates him though

and uefa is just the name of the european organization. the champions league is officially the 'uefa champions league'

they really need to call the uefa cup the 'uefa losers cup' to avoid the confusion

UEFA = Union of European Football Associations

UEFA Champions League (AKA 'European Cup' the old name) = Top clubs from European leagues compete. Winner is entered into the FIFA Club World Cup.

UEFA Cup = Lesser European competition, domestic cup winners and clubs finishing just outside the Champions League places in their leagues are entered into this competition. Becomes slightly more prestigious in the later stages as teams who place 3rd in the Champions League group stage are entered. Winner enters the European Super Cup, an exhibition style game with Champions League Winners vs UEFA Cup Winners.

Wikipedia explains it all quite well.

Winners of the MLS Cup are entered into the North and Central American equivalent of the Champions League. The winners of that are entered into the Club World Cup, were they get a chance to play the winners of the UEFA, AFC, CAF Champions Leagues, and Copa Libertadores.

Ah, now you're asking...truth is the offside law has become so convoluted and up to interpretation noone really knows what it is exactly any more, however here is a simple explanation of what it SHOULD be:

When receiving the ball from a member of their own team, a player cannot be in advance of the last defender of the opposition when the ball is played by their teammate. If the ball is played backwards, he is not offside. If the ball is played by an opposition player intentionally or accidentally, he is not offside.

HOWEVER; if a player fails to receive the ball, but is adjudged to be interfering with play (e.g. a player takes a free kick and scores directly, but his teammate stands in front of the goalkeeper in an offside postion blocking the keeper's vision. The goal is offside, and a free-kick is awarded to the defending team.)

Hope that explains it a bit.

Yeah it used to be that, and the champs of said areas usually contest the final. However, now it does include the champions of the other confederations and the champions of the host country.

Well for those who are interested about what drafts are they are when pro teams sign new players who finish playing on the college level and wanted to go on to the Pro level. The worst team of the season gets the first pick while the champions gets the last pick unless they traded for an better pick.

Football teams have a "youth" training.

Kids go there to have a test, if they have potential, they get in. They grow up playing in kids leagues, then youth leagues, then under 21, then if theyre good enough they get to the first team.

Closest thing we got here is the minor league system in Baseball and Hockey.

And it's still a just a one-off between Europe and South America
>> Anonymous
Drafts are stupid. The shittest team gets 1st pick? Lol. In the rest of the world the last team gets relegated, in America it gets a reward for it's shittines.
>> Anonymous
>>99263
It tries to keep balance within a league. This is definatly a plus in NFL (football) to prevent team stacking and also makes the role of the owners and coaches more difficult by trying to draft the right person and regulate their salary caps. This is not true in baseball where one rich bastard goes out and buys all-stars (N.Y. Yankees).

Unfortunatly, the draft fails many teams. A good example of this is the Detroit Lions who always get a top ten draft pick. Fags can't even get into the playoffs. They had 10 years to develop their players and they still can't do shit.

This system sucks because it rewards failure. Whereas in soccer (outside of the US) if you fail, you get your ass sent down to a lower league with crappier teams. Alternatively if you do well the the lower league you get promoted to the bigger leagues.

The biggest fucking problem with North American sports in general is FRANCHISING. The players aren't even owned by the clubs they're owned by the fucking NFL/NBA/MLB. If American sports just gave all the power to the clubs and got rid of the draft, the free market would take care of the rest. America is all about free market, right?

Ref fag here. Honestly, the Offside law isn't THAT complicated. It's just confusing in certain situations. The interpretations of what the specific parts of the law mean are really pretty straight forward.

Basically, the law first defines what an "offside position" is. A player is adjudged to be in an offside position if at any time while in his opponent's half he is nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the second to last defender and the ball. However, being in an offside position does not constitute an offense in and of itself.

A player must be punished for offside if, while in and offside position the balls is last touched by a teammate he...
1) Interferes with play,
2) Interferes with an opponent,
3) Gains an advantage from being in that position.

The trickiest part is defining what those three points mean, but it's not that bad.

1) Interfering with play -- Touching or otherwise playing the ball.

2) Interfering with an opponent -- Unfairly distracting or impeding an opponent.

3) Gaining an advantage from being in an offside position -- Playing a ball after it has rebounded an opponent, goal post, crossbar, etc.

There's a few other important points made. First is that the determination of whether a player would be offside should one of those three situations be present is made at the time the ball is touched by a teammate. Secondly, in determining offside position, all parts of the player's body with the exception of his arms are to be considered.
It's not the simplest rule, but it's not THAT bad if you get it well-explained, IMO.
>> Anonymous
arent players in offside positions always distracting to their opponents? unless theyve just taken a corner kick or something.
