Kickboxing Anonymous
Recently I was talking with friends about martial arts. When I was younger I did kickboxing for a very brief period, and told them I got up to the thrid belt.

They told me that Kickboxing doesn't HAVE belts, and also said that the knee and elbow-orientated moves I was taught don't apply to kickboxing.

So /sp/, what fucking martial art did I learn?

Your friend is a faggot.

If you learned how to kick and how to punch (box) without any of the forms, katas, spiritual mumbo-jumbo, fluff, etc. found in certain eastern styles, then you learned kickboxing.

The fact that you learned elbows and knees implies that your instructor is either

a) socially conscious and wants you to know some more brutal and effective techniques for real life situations or

b) your instructor wants you to also be capable of performing in Muay Thai (which is kickboxing w/ elbows and knees) or MMA (which is kickboxing with elbows, knees, and wrasslin)

As for belts, they simplify teaching for the instructor and the student. Just like how education is split up by grade level, it distinguishes the students relative skills at a glance so that appropriate level techniques can be learned and also allows for small ego boosts upon advancement(which can be good thing).

Just in case you did find a McDojo, you should look into the Instructor's credentials, affiliations, and competition record. Note that just because the instructor is a world title holder, doesn't mean he knows jack shit about teaching. Also, they are plenty of good trainers that stay out of the ring lest their ass get kicked.

While the place doesn't have to necessarily be a champion factory, if the instructor doesn't like the students competing against others outside the school that may be a BIG red flag.
