There are no such thing as Red Wing fans. Only bandwaggoners. The city can't even sellout tickets during the playoffs.

in all seriousness, can anyone explain (without trolling) why the redwings didnt sellout during the playoffs? i thought hockey was king in detroit
>> Anonymous
any fan who put up with the 70's and 80's, i can respect. these are the true hockey fans, the ones who stick with their team through shit times.

unfortunately these fans make up 10-15% of their fanbase (and that's a generous estimate)

As with the entirely of the US, hockey isn't. Most of the Wings' playoff games conflicted with Pistons playoff games - I think for the SC finals they were only half an hour separated from the start time of Pistons EC final games.

Car economy in the shitter, Pistons and Tigers have also been playing better recently, Wings raise prices for playoff seats, location far from the wealthier suburbs, been-there-done-that attitude regarding early playoff rounds.

However, despite the awful economy and the area hemorrhaging people, the Pistons were 1st in attendance, the Red Wings 8th, the Tigers set an all-time attendance record in 2007, and the Lions... even they still sellout. So obviously its not like these teams aren't supported.

Being a Wingsfag, and having huge amounts of family all over Michigan, I can tell you easily why this has happened:
1. Recession. Michigan (along with Ohio, Indiana, etc) hit hardest by economy collapse.
2. Huge sales for Tigers after off-season trades, before team sucked again.
3. Pistons being among most popular teams in NBA.
4. Red Wings tickets being too expensive all year long, and all playoffs long.
5. The Wings failing too many times in the playoffs from 1999-2001 and 2003-2006, before reaching the CF in 07 and winning it all in 08.

Now with 2 and 3, I read in SI that the Pistons and Tigers were selling record numbers of tickets, so it is highly possible that the Red Wings great success in the 90s and early 00s in ticket sales may have been due to all other Michigan teams sucking, and their low sales being because of the other teams winning again.

However, with the Tigers sucking like they did for that 19 year period, the Pistons being torn apart, and the Lions still being the worst team in sports history, expect the Wings to return to pre-lockout sales levels, due to less people seeing the other 3 teams.

my guess is because the hockey season parallel's with the NBA season, including playoffs. Pistons are way more popular than the Red Wings. Not to mention baseball season starts around that time, and Tigers are more popular also.

Try going to a game in Anaheim. Every game's a sellout, but there are tons of empty seats case all the tickets get bought by scalpers who mark 'em up by several orders of magnitude.

I for one have great respect for the Red Wings. Any team can SAY it's sold out it's building, doesn't mean it is. Playoff collapses have hurt the Wings pride, but hopefully this championship will bring fans back. Real fans, not bandwagoners.

idk, after landing marian hossa and a good backup goaltender, it looks like another bandwagon filled season for my wings, but I don't care, I'm just anxious to see them shatter their 05-06 campaign. I still wish we had shanahan...

So OP is an Avsfag? As a fellow Avsfag, I am ashamed to be associated with you. Detroit has a very good fanbase. Every team has it's share of bandwagoners. I know a few Detroit fans, and they're quite dedicated to their team, and they're great people. So, on behalf of other Avsfags who actually respect the sport of hockey, please shut the fuck up.

You wanna know why Michigan is a hell hole? Almost every white person in the state who has any money what-so-ever moved to a whole other state in the US. My extended family (on my moms side) only lives in the state due to most of them being from San Marino, and the only decent sized embassy/hall for San Marino citizens in America is in Rochester Hills.

Everyone in Michigan works cheap labor, and now that the labor is in entirely different countries, Michigan is a dying state.

Sports only has any success in Michigan because people want to escape their real lives for a couple of hours, similar to how people in the Great Depression went to baseball games to forget about how shitty their actual life was.

However, you can't forget, CB, that other states in the midwest like Ohio and Indiana are in just as bad, if not worse, shape then Michigan is.
