If your driving skill loses two or three hundredths of a second per lap, you aren't good enough to race.
Every lap, you have to hit points on the track within six inches or you aren't good enough. And you have to do that a lot...entering a turn, in the middle of a turn, at the end of a turn, and at the midpoint of the straightaway, for four turns. And that's a minimum.
Plus, in NASCAR there's a lot more passing than in open wheel racing, and that's a whole other challenge.
