Pros @ the Olympics Anonymous
Sorry if this has been covered a million times already, but...

Can someone clearly explain to me the rules and/or the logic behind the rules that allow some professionals like basketball players to compete, but other pros like boxers can't???

>Because the GENERIC TEAM couldn't win without THEIR BEST players.

Yeah. That's about right.

I agree with your sentiment, but it still doesn't answer the question.

The actual answer is apparently two fold:

1) Different scoring system.
2) There's a ban on 'professional paid athletes' because they have an unfair advantage in training due to their expenses being paid.

I guess that means they know for certain that basketball players are usually NOT olympic material. Remember 2004? That was embarrassing.

The athletes have more important shit to do, like fight real matches, or play real baseball. Etc.

Right but people like Kobe and the Williams sisters certainly have those huge advantages so why just them?

Why not David Beckham or Wlad Klitschko as well?

I have absolutely no idea.

It could be that Basketball is an extremely underdeveloped Olympic sport.

From the sound of this thread it looks like the Olympics are rigged and full of shit too.

There is a chance that Baseball will be in the 2012 Olympics. With that said if Real baseball pros don't play The comity has some explaining to do. Lol @ the thought of the best AAA and AA players being on the Olympics. But lets be honest, seeing third world countries playing sports like basketball and baseball are more comedy than sports.

The western amateurs couldn't compete with the Soviet-bloc state-funded "amateurs" so they got rid of the overall amateurism requirement, leaving it up to each sport's governing body to set up the rules. Some kept the amateur requirement, some didn't.
