Say Phelps does win 8 gold medals, 2 of them will be down to other people, not him. His events are all very similar, its like asking Bolt to run the 100, the 120 and the 90 in blue shoes,.. and im sure he'd kick ass in each of those events like he is going to in the 200.

What bolt did today, was unbelievable. It could have been even more unbelievable of course, that is the only shame about it.

Even though most likely bolt could win those events He needs to go out and actually win them.

Bolt would have as many golds as Phelps if he could race in:
100m freestyle sprint
100m running backwards sprint
100m running sideways sprint
200m freestyle sprint
200m running backwards sprint
200m running sideways sprint
300m individual medley (combining running forwards, backwards and sideways)
etc etc

I mean what is the point in having events other than freestyle? The challenge goes from "go as fast as you can" to "go as fast as you can but performing in a suboptimal way". They might as well add a one handed weightlifting and a high jump event where the Fosbury flop is banned.

>>Bolt had always seemed Olympic champion material in the 200 meters, and there was long and spirited debate between him and his coach, Glen Mills, about which other race to make part of his program. While I don't diss on Bolt's performance, but Phelps is the better athlete here. Remember he had to swim heats and finals in the same day and do it enough to enough to pass the heat then get the gold and smash 6 WR to utter pieces.

Besides, Bolt was heavily favored in this event. Phelps wasn't for 3 of his and all three of those were awesome. I know I will remember them WAY longer than Bolt's performance. And in during 'people won't remember swimming after this', people won't remember track either so moot point is moot.

full body strain?

seriously, Bolt is a great athlete and deserves to be a top 3 athlete of the olympics, but you ask me what's harder, swimming or sprinting? I can't imagine how tired and worn out my WHOLE body can be after swimming those races, compared to running as fast as I can and then catching my breathe afterwards

Being fastest man on earth is a great achievement, all props to Bolt, but swimming IMO is way more strenuous, no matter how much of a short race you complain it to be. Phelp's is 7/7 in golds, going on a possible 8th for another new record, and already has 6 broken records, Bolt has 1 gold and 1 broken record. Phelp's is the better overall athlete, but both will be remembered.

Go out and sprint 200m as fast as you can, and then swim 200m as fast as you can, and tell me which one is more strenuous. Swimming is the ultimate full body workout. Shit just look at the amount of calories Phelps had to intake to maintain his athletism. It nearly doubles most bodybuilder's diets.

There's a greater risk of injury in sprinting than in swimming. Just think about the mechanics of it. And if a sprinter strains a hamstring they are out for the rest of they year and may never recover their form. Just look at Tyson Gay - the fastest man on earth (9.68 wind assisted). He missed out on alot of training because a hamstring injury and didn't even qualify for the final of the 100m.

Phelps on the other hand, there are people up his ass on most races.

I'm not saying what Phelps is doing isn't impressive, it is. I just flat out think that most of the hype Phelps is generating is due to the fact he is winning a lot of medals, not because he is an all round athlete, because he is picking easier and similar events.

IF Bolt had access to a similar situation, he would walk it, and he would walk it easier that Phelps is. I think also a major factor in Bolt being the better athlete is that anyone can be a great swimmer but not everyone can sprint track and field.

Its the biggest event in the whole games for a reason, I didnt see 100,000 people in the stadia watching Phelps. No, they were too busy watching Bolt.

(Also, if Bolt was American and Phelps Jamaican, holy fuck would this thread have gone differently.)

He didnt even know he had broken the world record until after his victory lap. It was a fucking stroll for him, he went so slow (in his mind) that he clearly didnt think he had broken the record,... its properly crazy how fast that guy is.

no anyone cannot be an olympic level swimmer. Everyone is underrating phelps because of the EASE he is winning. Similar events are not he is still winning and doing so RIGHT after he just swam another event.

Bolt still only has just one medal and barely beat the previous world record not to mention "wind assisted" tyson gay is right there with him.

>anyone can be a great swimmer but not everyone can sprint track and field
BS. Anyone can become a fairly fast runner, or a fairly fast swimmer.

Not "anyone" can compete at an olympic level in either event.

Holy god, this has to be a troll.
"Barely" beat the previous world record? Just breaking the world record is an amazing feat, but Bolt started celebrating BEFORE he crossed the finish line! He wasn't even trying and STILL broke it!
And Tyson Homosexual? wtf? you mean that guy who got fifth in the semifinals?

Just look how often swimming records were broken this year and how often the 100m was broken.

Spoiler: Every swimming record was broken more this year than the 100m WR over the last 20 years.

Trust me, anyone can be an Olympic swimmer with the right training and diet. The fact there are 30+ year olds in the USA squad hitting medals is proof that its easier to be a swimmer.

Bolt is the complete opposite of a typical sprinter, he is tall and big, its unheard of for a tall sprinter to do well. And Bolt broke his own world record btw, and I hope you havent seen the race, because if you have and you are calling the .04 second (massive in the 100m sprint) break menial, then you are a joke.

In fact, I see you on these forums every time I come here, and ill be honest, from reading what you have written on each separate occasion, I have decided that you are a fucking cock.

There are over 100 medals in swimming. Just swimming (going from one end of the pool to the other)

Seriously.

What the fuck.

He's American, so he probably HASN'T seen the race, since NBC's Olympic coverage has to be the most fucking retarded on the face of the Earth.
They aren't airing the 100m final for like another ten hours!!!

saw the race. posted the link several times. one race a superior athlete does not make.

Especially when he decides to showboat not get the actual time he could get.

That leaves everybody to speculate on the whatif's

Phelps inturn is actually accomplishing the what if's.

And yes there are multiple swimming events but there are a shitload of different races as well.

someone posted the link where Bolt admitted he didnt want to run the 400 because it would be too hard.

Swimming uses much more muscles, requires more air control and much more technique than running.

Running is very dependant on your body. Swimming pretty much molds your body into the "ideal" swimming body in like one year of swimming 2 miles a day. This (small) workout burns 900ish calories.

Swimming also advances with technology. The suits they're wearing are not even CLOSE to the same as the ones worn even 4 years ago- and in swimming drag is fucking everything.

Phelps is impressive because in some races he's 2-3 seconds ahead of everyone. Now, swimming is much "slower" in terms of pace- but its still one or two body lengths which is hellishly impressive at the Olympic level.

It will just take one of us Bolt fans getting off our ass and getting into swimming to show you guys how easy it is.

I wasn't kidding before though, I used to be a national swimmer when I was younger, I may get back into it,.. im only 6' so it'll have to be breaststroke though.

I'd drunk though, and im off to bed. Watch out for uk male breaststroke in 2012.

Bolt won't be remembered for long, every other Olympics someone beats the 100m Sprint. I am willing to bet, the Jamaican had some weed in is system, & most likely will have to give back the gold. Olympian or no Olympian all Jamaicans smoke weed, its their addiction.

Phelps will be remembered forever, 7 medals in a single Olympics, & having 13 Gold Medals. In Order for Bolt to catch up he'll have to do most the running events, maybe some hurtles.

Top 3 Athletes

1.) Phelps
2.) Walsh
3.) May-Treanor

Walsh & May-Treanor haven't lost a single match in 100+ games. Did Bolt win 100+ races? I don't think so. Phelps is only ahead because he has the most gold medals individually, & tied for the most gold in a single Olympics.

Michael Phelps broke several of his WR records. As for that strangely erotic display of him, Phelps has a longer wingspan, huge feet and he's double-jointed, giving him an ideal swimmer's body.

And 30+ swimmers aren't that common.

Hell, if you want to be like that, Donovan Bailey was 28 and Carl Lewis was 30 (for a second time) when they broke their records. DUR HUR HUR.

HURR DURR PHELPS IS BRILLIANT FOR WINNING THE SAME RACE 8 TIMES HERP

Fucking faggots. Phelps is just winning, most of the time its by a hairs bredth, the last one was by 1/1000th of a second.

Bolt, however, is ripping the competition apart. Coming from adversity, critics saying he would fail spectacularly, he has become the number one in the world virtually overnight. Most importantly, he isnt just winning. He is destroying the competition, finishing races with 10metres of space between him and the nearest rival. Unheard of ability. Also, its can be seen ,through him consistently setting new records since he was 15, an age surely before when atheletes start using PED's, that he does not use steroids or PED's

Don't let the American media fool you into thinking that 100m freestyle and the 100m backstroke are ANY different. Ask the 100m finalists to run with their hands held into fists and their heads skewed at an angle and Bolt would still win.

Um, most of those races he was SECONDS ahead. That's pretty insane as far as swimming goes. The only ones that were close were the 4 x 100m free relay and 100m fly.

And Bolt was favorite to win, bullshit.
