WTF? Brandon Phillips over Chase Utley?

I need to see his reasoning on that, because, in plus/minus -- HIS OWN STAT -- Utley was worth, like, two Brandon Phillipses.

Nevermind, I didn't realize it's a panel vote. The panel sucked, though. No one was better than Utley at second this year. It's not that no one else was good, it's that Utley was historically great.

Rob Neyer, John Dewan, BIS video scouts and Joe Posnanski voted him No. 1, and the Tom Tango Fan Poll had him 10th. This should tell you something.

Defensive range. Phillips can get to balls that Utley can't.
>> Anonymous
>>442876
Then why did Phillips have 17 plays made above average and Utley had 47?

Why did Utley have 463 attempts and Phillips had 401?

And, most telling of all, why did Phillips make 35 outs outside of the 2B zone and Utley made 66?

People have a lot of trouble judging range when they watch games. You need to actually compare, on every play, how many similar balls player A got to and player B did not. You can't just watch a few games and say "player A looks faster, so he has more range." A lot of players make up for less speed with superior positioning and instincts.

>This one surprised me, but it shouldn’t have. Brandon Phillips finished third in our voting last year and now has won his first Fielding Bible Award with 86 points. I voted for Chase Utley, who had the highest Plus/Minus figure at any position this year (+47 – see the Kenny Rogers discussion below for more information about the Plus/Minus System). But the panelists who watched Phillips play more regularly have seen what he can do on the field and rewarded him accordingly.

Cincyfag here, Phillips deserves this. He loses the golden glove every year only to the reputation of other more well known second basemen.

McDonald wasn't even a Top 10 SS in +/- this year.

Look at the ballot of Mike Murphy. Especially the part where he votes for Jeter.

Its the argument of scouts vs. Sabermetrics.

You know, sometimes scouting works.

You think these people actually effectively scout every player and are able to give you a firm evaluation of how much better one player is than another? I refuse to believe they watch and evaluate that many games and plays.

I'd prefer an objective format that evaluates every single batted ball and the resulting play. Seriously, what's the difference between what BIS does and "scouting?" It's not based on a box score, it's based on the same things scouts see.

I have nothing against scouting. Scouting is key in good moneyball offices. Team like Tampa, Boston, Oakland, etc. have amazing farm systems for a reason.
