>>296695 "ATHENS--The large open area surrounding the major cluster of this city's Olympic venues remains as unpleasantly barren as it was during the 17 days of the 2004 Summer Games.
No major events have been held at the pool complex since 2004, and the lack of effective maintenance was obvious: Tiles were missing on the deck, and rust stains in the pool showed the signs of slow decay. A crew was trying to remove accumulated grime from the diving well.
In the main stadium, permanent home field for the AEK soccer team and site of frequent major concerts, seat backs were dirty and the concrete aisles and walkways stained. A feeling of benign neglect permeated the 26-year-old stadium, renovated to be the jewel of an Olympics that cost the Greeks billions of dollars for lasting infrastructure and temporary operations.'
