Some U.S. states don't have a pro team. Why is this? No interest? No money? Granted, it doesn't make sense for North Dakota to have a hockey team, but why no pro team at all.

Dakotas, Montana, Arkansas, Wyoming, Nebraska, Vermont, etc.. what's your story?

Because there is nothing in those states except hilbillies and fundies. Barely reach a population of over 9000!

The only pro team it WOULD make sense for North Dakota to have is a hockey team.

The biggest state/area you've got there is Arkansas, which is 32nd in population. There aren't all that many states with pro teams below them. In fact, I can only think of one team... the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake.

In north dakota, they live or die by the UND fighting sioux hockey team..

The Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming have phenomenal College Hockey teams. The only thing people in Nebraska care about is the Corn Huskers, Arkansas has the Razor Backs, and Vermont loves its college basketball/hockey team.

These states don't need a pro team when the college team dominates the market.

I mean, you have a point...Arkansas has the Razorbacks, Alabama and the Crimson tide. etc etc. Maine should probably have a hockey team, but their population is much too low.

tv market is a smaller factor than local ticket purchasing when it comes to choosing locations. l.a. doesn't have a football team not b/c of tv, but b/c nobody wants to go. most of those areas don't have enough people that can afford season tickets and luxury boxes, the rest (/ark/, /neb/) are college football strongholds.

The NHL moved teams out of popular markets like Winnipeg and Quebec to larger markets like Denver and Phoenix. The NFL is so much different than any other sport tv wise because there are so few games and the ratings are large enough that they don't need a team in LA.

Most of these less populated regions do not have the financial infrastructure (read: people making a lot of money) to justify an investment. Then again, the Sonics are probably moving to Oklahoma City, so that could change.
