George suspended; may be traded

SUWANEE, Ga. - In a drastic move reflective of the Atlanta Falcons' desperate situation, coach June Jones suspended quarterback Jeff George for one game Monday and indicated he may be traded or released.
Jones said that 36-year-old Bobby Hebert will start Sunday at San Francisco and that the Falcons will make a decision by today on George's future with the team.
The disciplinary action was the result of a sideline tantrum by George during Sunday night's 33-18 loss at home to Philadelphia, which dropped the Falcons to 0-3.
Jones replaced George with Hebert late in the third quarter with Philadelphia leading 23-10. George reacted by trailing Jones and complaining in a loud litany of inflammatory words, several players said. As the situation came to a head, Jones turned to George and pointed for him to leave the area.
Jones announced the suspension after meeting with George on Monday afternoon and then informing the team.
``We're going to take a hard look at what's best for Jeff and what's best for us,'' Jones said. ``I told him I would call him (today) and let him know what our decision was.''
