However, let's say an LA Angels - Detroit Tigers game is airing on both ESPN2 and Fox Sports West. ESPN2's version of the game will be blacked-out, for Fox has a contract with the Angels that allows them to block ESPN from airing the game to those "local" areas, forcing viewers to watch Fox Sports West instead of ESPN2. This is why you may see ESPNEWS on ESPN or ESPN2 sometimes instead of the game you thought would be on.
