Please note I FUCKING HATE the Florida Panthers.
In the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals, a marginally-talented, but disciplined and hard-working, Florida Panthers beat the Flyers and Penguins and whoever the fuck else they beat in the first round, and they did it by holding the other teams' forwards on every play. I was infuriated when they did it against my Flyers, but when the Panthers did the exact same thing to the Pens, I said, oh well, I guess that's how they play NHL hockey now. They hold and interfere and obstruct and none of it is called so how could I blame the Panthers? It's the Flyers and Penguins fucking fault for not cheating as good as the Panthers did.
Yeah, well, game one of the Stanley Cup Finals against Colorado, the Panthers got called for obstruction TWICE in the first ten minutes of the game. Funny, all of a sudden, John Vanbiesbrouck didn't look like Terry Sawchuk anymore, and the Panthers played like an AHL team, and the Avs forwards skated all over Florida, just days after guys like Lindros and LeClair and Lemieux and Jagr looked like they were skating in sand in the earlier rounds.
So, in one respect, I was glad the NHL called the rules the way they were written, but they sure as hell didn't call it that way for the three rounds before the finals. So even though I think overall the Panthers can go suck a dick, it was kinda shitty for the NHL to change the rules the way they did it, when they did it, and Florida got jobbed big time.
