my theory as to why football is so much more interesting than soccer is because of the field goal. the field goal allows a team to put points on the board even if they dont make it into the endzone. rather than it being all or nothing, they have a third option of scoring half the points, rewarding them for making it fairly deep into the opponents territory, but not deep enough to score the td. in soccer, the only way to score obviously is to score a goal, which obviously is a difficult task as most games end at about 2-1 (which most would consider to be a boring game to watch). if the only way to score in football was the touchdown, then most games would probably end at about 14-7, or the equivalent to a boring 2-1 soccer match
