The highest ranked champion of a non-BCS conference will receive an automatic berth if:

* It is ranked in the top twelve, or
* Ranked in the top sixteen and higher than another BCS Conference champion.

... this week, neither the ACC or Big East have a team ranked higher than 23.

TCU will beat Utah, and there will be no BCS bowl for the Mountain West.

Check the rankings.

Even if TCU *does* beat Utah, then Utah and BYU will both be in the Top 16.

So will Boise State, with at least TWO automatic bids available. WOW.

The automatic berth can only go to one non-BCS team.

>No more than one such team from Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, and the Western Athletic Conference shall earn an automatic berth in any year. If two or more teams from those conferences satisfy the provisions for an automatic berth, then the team with the highest finish in the final BCS Standings will receive the automatic berth, and the remaining team or teams will be in the pool of teams eligible for selection by the bowls as at-large teams.

Thanks for making my point for me.

If you're a bowl-selection committee, who do you pick? A one-loss MWC team ranked in the Top 16, or 23-ranked Maryland?

Duh.

They would have to pick Maryland, even if the ACC is complete shit. The champions of the six major conferences are guaranteed a BCS bowl appearance.

Not if they're ranked lower than 16, they aren't.
