Hay /sp/

I'd like to take up fencing. There are three clubs in my area and I have the choice to fence foil, epee and sabre. What do you guys recommend and why? Right now I'm leaning towards epee, I'm not sure why though. So fencers of /sp/, let me hear your reasonings or thoughts on fencing in general.

It's gay.

Well yeah..I fence saber. Having fenced all three weapons before, I preferred saber. Its a lot more fun I think. Much faster, moar action involved. See if you can try all three first though. Different rules of right of way, movements and scoring areas for all of them.

I can recommend epee. I used to train with, and I like it because it's fast, dynamic and fun. Didn't try the other ones, so not much help there - but epee sure is fun.

Yeah it sure is gay... Just because it requires much more finesse and skill than your shitty baseball or football ever would.

Your only choice is master katana

I'm off to University at the end of the week actually, and am thinking of joining some clubs for more unusual sports which I otherwise wouldn't get the opportunity to play. At the moment fencing is high on, if not top of the list, since I've always thought it looks like fun. Thoughts?

+1 for Epee

Have you fenced before? I'd think not. You're also the same person who wouldn't think soccer or tennis was a sport.

Start with foil. After a while, try out saber or epee and figure out which suits your style best. I'm more a foil/epee person.

Baseball may not require much finesse unless you're the pitcher. Football's finesse really depends on what position is played. All of the skill positions (QB/WR/RB) as well as the defensive secondary really require finesse. It's not the sort of physical chess that fencing is, but anyone that's played football, especially if they've played at a skill spot will tell you its more than just power or speed.

same for me at Hull.

I fence too. Start out with foil for the basics. You'll usually have some fast and crazy bouts because of the high uses of Parrying and Counter attacking but you can only hit the Torso. Epee is pretty cool where your head and torso are targets. And Sabre is basically being Rafael from Soulcalibur.
>> How to succeed at fencing Anonymous
1) Step onto platform
2) Pull out revolver
3) Threaten to kill the judge if he doesn't give you the match.

I don't know why, but I have a sneaking suspicion that that might not work out as smoothly as you might at first expect.

fencing saber is only for crazy girls, that only want to swing the sword till it hits something

Fencing epee is the only manly weapon. Sabre is gay and foil is even gayer.

Epee takes skill and doesn't have retarded ass rules like foil. Go epee, you'll be happy.

epee is for faggots that are scared to get hit in the hand...BOO HOO Cry me a river

Epee is the gayest of them all. A touch on the toe or knee counts as a kill? Sabre's where it's at, especially since right-of-attack makes it the closest to actually, you know, being in a duel.

lol saber. You guys need to stop watching anime, saber doesnt work for shiet in real life, dont even say it's closest to a dual bs

>> Anonymous

Speaking as someone who's played every line position other than center, it takes a lot of skill, timing, coordination, and quick reactions to play football at ANY position, to say nothing of the massive strength requirements for linemen at any level above high school.

The rules with foil and sabre are fucking stupid. Who hits first, wins. Ties are ties. No bullshit.

Btw chief, this isn't 1650, we're not dueling with swords anymore. Who gives a shit whats more accurate. Epee takes more skill.

Didn't cost me much, since the club at my University provides you with everything you need. If you have to buy all the kit yourself though, it's probably not exactly going to be the cheapest sport to take up.
