"Using olympics etc strengthens the community since it's good to see your representatives at the top."

True, but there's a limit of contestants per country per event. You may as well lump all of the Americas into one group and form a circle jerk.
>> Anonymous
>>237111
But the US is strong alone and they hate each other passionately anyway. El Salvador and Honduras even fought a war over a game of football.

Team events are the biggest obstacle since you can only nominate one or two teams and often they are made up of a single nations athletes instead of the best from all.
>> Anonymous
>>237109
>The Americans do it all the time
NO, THE AMERICANS DO NOT DO IT ALL THE TIME, NEITHER DO THE CANADIANS, NOR THE MEXICANS.

The Soviet Union is arguably a single state, seriously, the states in the Soviet Union were as independent as the states in the United States. In fact, the Soviet Union competed as one team.

But Europe? Each country in Europe is a bona-fide sovereign nation. They have no business doing that shit.

Until I see Europe compete AS ONE SINGLE TEAM, I will only see their achievements by individual national delegations. Same for everyone else.
>> Anonymous
>>237160
The USA are barely more a state than the EU. And 1992 after the collaps of the Soviet Union, they (with the exception of the baltic states) still had one common team.
The two Germanys also competed as one, I wouldn't be too surprised to see one european team in 20 years or so.

The idea to list the EU in the medals table comes from the commision and since there aren't really official rules regarding the tables, no one stops me in adding them.
>> Anonymous
>>237179
Small problem- when you add European as one "team" you're just ignoring the fact that these individual countries:

a) Can send the maximum number of competitors allowed per event
b) Have accomplished programs on their own

So lets take swimming as an example- the max per event is 2 people. But your European team can send 22 people in that one event as long as they qualify.

Your team is cheating.
>> Anonymous
>>237179
Of course there are no rules.

I can make tables by language, by countries who have black people in their team, etc.

The point is, several teams compete as one, even the two Koreas competed as one, but this year they competed seperately.

However, the only true way to judge the achievements of a team are by.... their TEAMS. If Europe was competing as one unified team, I'd have no objection, because they'd be competing as a team. But Europe is not competing as one unified team. WHen you see the medals tallies, you see them done by team because the atheletes are competing as a single entity.

Having said that, I don't think Europe will ever compete as a single team. There's absolutely no need. Olympics are more about national pride than about collective supra-national cooperation.

>>237189
took someone long enough to figure it out.

>>237192
I just got here after seeing that race. Its common sense.

Granted, its inane to think that a Europe team wouldn't get a ton of medals, and they'd have a bevy of excellent people to choose from. But they physically could NOT get that many medals. There just aren't that many events 2 days in.
>> Anonymous
>>237191
>Olympics are more about national pride than about collective supra-national cooperation.
See, I'm a european nationalist. I identify myself as an European as much as I do as a German. I'm opposed to the so called reunification of Germany but I support pan-european unification.
The german team is made up mainly of east germans (whom I hate with great passion) and even they can't win more than one bronze medal so I rather look at the larger picture and cheer for the greater team, even if it's cheating it still helps.

A American might understand that. He is a citizen of the US but also one of the subdivisions, be it one of the 50 states, DC or something else. Patriotism can apply to subdivisions as well, down to the lowest level.
California quickly lost their independance yet many people still see themself as Californians.

Another point is that Germany as a nation isn't old and when it was founded 1871, it was already a compromise. Austrians for example are also Germans yet they were left out. That division was solidified in the treaties after the wars and exists until today, so why should I settle with something that's the land of all Germans by name only.
>> Anonymous
>>237218
Germany is a unification of most germanic states, not a pan-European unification.

Actaully, I don't even know what we're talking about now. Fuck you, I was talking about people who lumped the medals from all the Euro teams together. But it's wrong because several European teams compete in a single event, when the USA is limited to a certain number of competitors. So comparing european combined medals with USA's medals is completely erroneous.

It doesn't even include all standard german speaking states let alone all european germanic speaking states. Germany was part of super countries before like the Roman, Frankish and French empires

>Actaully, I don't even know what we're talking about now.
Because some people can't seem to understand why someone would give up his home country for a greater good.

As for the starters, be reminded that the Soviet Union had three votes instead of one in the UN general assembly.

And new table. Wikipedia is currently protected so I can't add the EU at the top.

2 gold and one bronze now :D

GB can never compete with the USA, let's be honest. Firstly we're a small island with about 60 million people (I may be over-estimating that) and the US has 300 million, right? Secondly the US seems to value sport far higher than our system. There's such little encouragement in GB for kids to have a passion for sport, and it doesn't help that our facilities aren't exactly word class. Hopefully 2012 will change all this. Sport in school seems to be at the back where as in the US it's one of the most important things. I'd say that you get more encouragement when you get to university, but by then it's usually too late.

Last but not least, the US took more athletes. The US team is always stellar so more athletes means...hmmm...more medals!

Of course you fucking can't. I would've been deleted on sight anyways.

You can't combine the EU or Europe as one team because THEY ARE NOT COMPETING AS A SINGLE TEAM. That means that in an event like swimming, european teams have a total of MORE than 2 swimmers per event.

THE MAXIMUM PER TEAM IS 2.

That is why you cannot combine the entire European teams and say, lol Europe is number one.

Well, I'm sorry to say that you read it wrong. I get what you mean though, maybe I should have worded it better.

I don't think that GB suck, I think we've got one of the best teams we've ever had at the Olympics. However, I do believe that we suck compared to the US - where's the problem in that?

I'm not going to be the typical Eurofag and say something like 'Lulz, US team is all on drugs!!11' because I know that the US team is stellar because the USA puts far more effort into sport than GB does. Secondly the US has far more resources to put into sport, unlike GB. That's why I believe the US will always be better than us in the Olympics.

We're a shitty little island in the end, and although we're not at the top of the table we're still proud about each and every medal we get.

Plus, we're used to failure anyway ;-)

- No one really cares for Indoor Volleyball in the US, they're caring about the Beach one, although they might after what happened to the Men's coach's in-laws. Besides, the Women's Indoor were kinda expected to fail moar. They haven't won a medal since 1992 Barcelona and never got gold ever.
- Track and Field, bitch. Also, baseball and softball.
- Even if the Girls' Gymnastics Team is second in the prelims, it was only a difference of TWO points, which means, it's technically anybody's game at that point. If the girls didn't fuck up in the floor exercises and the uneven bars, they would've been first. All they need to tighten their shit up.
