What does /sp/ think about the Olympics? I think the're a joke. Nations spend billions on bids, infrastructure, training etc. for two weeks of warm fuzzies only to forget all the athletes in a week except for maybe the 100m winner. Spirit of competition? It's the countries that have the most sophisticated doping systems that do well.

I dont watch the Olympics and think it is lame as shit, but it is a sport. Saying it is not is just ignorant. It is physical competition, athlete vs. athlete. What else does it need to qualify as a sport?

Popularity. Otherwise its just a competitive activity.

And in some cases like figure skating, where judging solely determines the outcome, its competitive art.

Might not be popular in the States, but fucking people get killed over the Olympics.

Umm.... How about it's a chance for amature athletes to shine and have a chance to get their 15 minutes. It also brings attention to non-mainstream sporting events (I bet you enough Canadians started watching skiing because we did so good at in the 2006 Winter). Additionally, it brings an entire nation together, get behind their country and cheer for a common goal. Finnaly, it brings tourism for the hosting country (which means money), and possibly it gives a country bragging rights.
