I support all countries competing. All countries wish to win the gold, and only 1 may do so in each event. There are so many that don't even get close to obtaining a medal. Many are happy to compete on such a stage, that they are even considered among the best in the respective sport.
There are 2 ways to think about it, and both are right on most levels.
Obtaining mostly gold shows that athletes the country sends into events are the best in those events. This shows the utter dominance in these sports.
Obtaining the most overall, especially an even amount of all medals, shows the level of athleticism across sports for that particular country. A country that can medal but not always win gold shows a country which supports so many different types of athletes in almost every sport you can think of.
China won a lot of gold, and it was a concentrated effort to do so.
USA won a lot of medals of different flavors, and it showed the strength of a system supporting so many different types of athletes.
I am honestly glad this situation happened, as collecting the most overall and most gold shows true and utter dominance not just in certain sports, but across the table. No country can claim this, because no country amassed medals in the top 3 spots that it obliterated the entire competition. I am glad to see a mix of countries atop the world than one, even if I'm an American.
So fuck off with the medal count topics. Only fucking trolls start arguments about it.
