>Brown run for 62-yard touchdown -- after the Patriots had seen the play five times.

good read

That's fascinating stuff. I'm wondering if the Dolphins have inadvertently started a mini-trend here. I wonder if they'll be the catalyst that gets this formation implemented across the league. Like they said, you can't use it all the time but I wouldn't be surprised if you start to see numerous teams busting this out a few times a game.

I could see maybe the vikings use it, might work for the bills aswell

If you guys want to read about how the Wildcat (what the Dolphins were running) creates mismatches then read this:

Football is so fucking interesting when you get down to strategy. There isn't a sport like it. Not even close.

I've always wondered how the pistol offense would do in the NFL.

Probably not too well.

I was watching the Fins-Pats game at a sports bar and I remember thinking "Jesus Christ, was that a RB direct snap? Does this still fucking happen in the NFL?"

I'd like to see more of this style of play in the NFL. Things are getting a bit stale.

The Chargers and Raiders could both make good use of it, as LT has shown on numerous occasions that he throws a pretty darn pretty ball, while McFadden ran that offense in college with tremendous success (by Arkansas standards)

The Pats have Vrabel and Bruschi as established linebackers. How the hell are they going to be able to help cover ground every time? Pats run defense has been suspect since last year and it hasn't really come to light as often since Belichick calculated that the passing game would bring enough offense to compensate for the geriatric members of defense.

I'd like to see another week of this offense and how it fares against a more athletic defense who are more than well equipped to stop them on the run.

i think the point is that belichick is supposed to be some sort of defensive mastermind (at least in cleaveland) and, with a good knowledge of the single wing offense, managed to get scored on or give up a first down EVERY TIME THE FORMATION WAS RUN

britfag here, i was watching the game (and im new to the nfl) i was under the impression that you HAD to snap it to the quaterback, then he can do as he likes, doing stuff like the dolphins did is exellent, was this in the NFL ages ago and died out or something? seems perfect for some teams

and definatly as a quick "surprise" play.

I don't really see it as a trick play, and I wonder why the Hell it isn't used in all offenses that are run oriented. It gives the Running back time that he would usually have taken concentrating on a hand off, to make a decision on where the weaknesses of defense are on any particular play.

It works really well when your Running Back is the best player on your team, as in the case of the Dolphins. You can't expect it to be this successful all the time, but putting the ball in the hands of your best player is always a good decision IMO.

Its not run on every team, or against every team because of personal matchups

To Run a single wing effectivly you need to have a Running Back who is good on both the outside and up the middle, able to throw a pass, and able to make the desision. You also need a WR or RB lineing up on the outside with these same qualities.
And on the other side of the ball, you need to catch the other team without a planned defense and with slow inside linebackers who have an issue stopping a quick run.

So in reality, the Dolphins will not pull this off again. People will have spend time in practice to know what to shift when Ronnie lines up undercenter.
From the outside, I think the Pats come off better in this one then the Dolphins do. The Pats learned they need to adjust quicker, and with an extra week on practice, they will come out better.
However, the Dolphins used it so effectivly, that everyone will be ready for it. And when they weren't running it, the offense seemed average at best.

Well to be fair Pennington had a pretty good game tossin' the rock. No TD passes, but that was seemingly because Brown ran it in at will.

Yeah, you obviously didn't see the game. Pennington fucking carved up the Pats secondary the entire game, they couldn't do a thing to stop him. The only reason he didn't have all the touchdowns was because Ronnie was so freaking good.
