You know, I find it odd with the whole Chinese gymnastics team thing that no one sits down and considers, "Hm. Maybe Chinese people, and East Asians in general, have a different facial structure and aging pattern than the rest of the world."
You've got to remember, Americans, we live in a country whose average age of first menstruation has been slowly getting younger and younger for a long time now. China's still a developing country, where the diet patterns are very different from Americans' or Western Europeans'.
You also have to realize how *different* people look. As a half-Chinese American male, (and trust me, I'm not a PRC fan; what the PRC has done to its own Han Chinese is much worse than anything they've done to Tibet or the rest of the world so far) between twelve and seventeen, I may as well have been twelve, and between seventeen and (I'm eighteen) I may as well be twenty. But I'm not pinning this on any one group of people. I have just as hard a time placing the ages of South Asian, Arabic, or Sub-Saharan people.
I think taking a step back and realizing these sorts of things will prevent the knee-jerk we've seen so far.
