No one really knows how points work, especially considering how there are now multiple polls (AP, USA Today, and now Harris). I DO know that they average these scores to get the BCS rankings. Not sure what else they use. And don't think I haven't tried figuring it out.
The problem isn't so much with that, as Pre-Season rankings are shitty, and completely arbitrary. But if OSU has a lot of fans, and gets a pre-season rank of 1, they're more likely to get in to the Big Game even if another team goes undefeated, like Auburn, or even Boise State.
Rankings, tho, Top 12 are guaranteed a BCS-Bowl spot. Which means a shit-ton of $$$.
Top 25 get numbers in front of them (ooh!). Others receiving votes are just, y'know, they got points too, but not enough to be top 25. If a top 25 team loses a game, they move down.
I'd suggest wiki, but even they can't make sense of this mess.
