It'll default to him eventually since all of the AL's most notable (non-injury prone) pitchers are migrating to either the NL or mediocrity (or, in Barry Zito's case, both).
Seriously, look at the list of notable AL starters in recent years.
Curt Schilling - Done. Josh Beckett - One great year. Mike Mussina - Meh. Roger Clemens - LOL Randy Johnson - Sucks/NL. Chien Ming-Wang - One great year. Erik Bedard - One great year. Scott Kazmir - Plays in Tampa, so no one gives a shit, even when they're the best team in baseball. Sadly, I doubt he'll ever be remembered as more than the young stud the Mets pissed away for Victor Zambrano. Johan Santana - NL. Kenny Rogers - Sucks. Justin Verlander - Way too inconsistent. Only a well-known name for his impressive rookie campaign. The entire 2005 White Sox starting rotation - Sucks. Except for Vazquez, he's still decent. Garcia doesn't even have a job anymore. Francisco Liriano - Hurt. (Many people wonder why the Giants made the Pierzynski trade. Apparently none of them knew Liriano was an injury risk.) C.C. Sabathia - NL. Bartolo Colon - Sucks. Started the year in AAA. Tim Hudson/Barry Zito/Mark Mulder - NL/NL + Sucks/Out of a job. Dan Haren - NL. Rich Harden - NL. (What the fuck, Oakland. Stop it.) Felix Hernandez - Hurt too often. Doesn't seem to be able to make that one final leap he was supposed to. John Lackey - Only guy on this list I can't find something bad to say about. He just doesn't come off as an "era great" to me, though.
So who the hell is left? Mr. Complete Game, Roy Halladay.
