Ameriball is not a continuous game like futból, it is periodic, like cricket or baseball. The play stops once the ball is downed or declared dead, and resumed once the ball is put back into play.
The ball is declared dead after incomplete forward passes, or scrimmage kicks that leave the field. The ball is downed if the player controlling the ball is brought into contact with the ground with any part of his body besides his feet or hands by an opposing player, runs out of bounds, or if the ball crosses into the end zone.
Scrimmage kicks and forward passes can only be attempted once per play, from behind the spot where the ball was placed into play (the line of scrimmage).
Teams can score 6 points for possessing the ball in their opponent's end zone, which is followed by an extra point try; 1 point for a field goal and 2 for successful conversion of a 3-yard play into the end zone. Teams can score 3 points for a field goal unaccompanied by a touchdown; this is a kind of scrimmage kick. Finally, a team can be awarded 2 points for downing an opposing ball carrier in that team's end zone, called a safety.
Basically those are the cardinal rules. Wikipedia can tell you more/better.
