Europeans: Something I've always wanted clarified. How does this whole multi-leveled league work?

Most american/candian leagues only have 1 level, with the best of that going into playoffs, so it always struck me as a kind of an odd system.

I'm asking, because I was apparently promoted in EA's Rugby 06, and I'm not really sure why.

Well, I think the system (at least in the NHL) is pretty fair to a bad team. Look at what happened to the Penguins and the Capitals.

The worst place to be is a middling team. The ones that just miss the playoffs but don't get a playoff spot or a decent draft pick, so they don't really improve.

Unless you have Ken Holland as your GM, of course. That man is a genius. Dan Cleary is the only first round draft pick on the entire Red Wings roster

I always thought a multi-league system would be perfect for america. Just think about it, a football team in some small village jumps 6 leagues up in 10 years. I thought you guys would be suckers for stories like that. But then it's a really shitty feeling to get relegated, I know what I'm talking about, my team got relegated 2 years ago, and now it's about to happen again.

I think the problem with that is that there aren't many small clubs in the U.S., and they're followed much less than the BIG city pro organizations.

Not to mention travel in north america is a super bitch compared to in europe.
