because Notre Dame is the baby of the NCAA. They are a mediocre team and best and always get such high praise. The AP Poll always gives them the benefit of the doubt and places them higher than they deserve year in and year out. Despite being so mediocre, they always get one of the top recruiting classes because people have seen Rudy too many times.

Also, they're fans are ubiquitous. I live in New Jersey and still see ND fans everywhere. Just because you have irish ancestry and are catholic , you shouldn't think they automatically makes you a diehard ND fan.

All that doesn't = their wins this season, though. Unless you count the recruiting, and then whatever reason people have for going to Notre Dame, that's their choice. I wish them well.

And whatever reason people root for any team, that's their thing, be it good or bad.

Also, in their football program they one of the only teams to not be in a conference. This means they're allowed to pick games from any school to play and aren't forced to play certain hard teams like teams in conferences like the Pac-10, SEC, or Big Ten.

For example a few years ago, ND went to a bowl game when they only played teams like Navy. They get blown out by USC and Michigan, they're only tough games of the season, and end up being rated 5.w

Was wondering about that D-1 Independent thing. How did that happen anyway?

the NCAA lets ND do whatever they want. They're the spoiled baby child of the NCAA.

Not too terribly long ago, lots of NCAA schools in both football and basketball were independents. How the Fighting Irish have remained in that status has nothing to do with the NCAA who have absolutely no control over what teams play in what conferences (or, no conference at all).

The combination of Notre Dame's television contract with NBC and their sweetheart deal with the BCS (plus a fan base that "travels well" for ANY bowl game) has allowed them to be able to hold onto their independent status while everybody else was forced into conferences (minus Army and Navy, although Army did have a go in Conference USA for a while). The disappearance of most independents was the same reason for the big "defection-fest" a few years ago mostly involving the ACC, Big East, and Conference USA...money!

To show how much the college football landscape has changed in a mere 20 years, here's the teams in Division I-A (now FBS) that were independents in 1988:

Akron
Army
Boston College
Cincinnati
East Carolina
Florida State
Louisiana Tech
Louisville
Memphis State (now just plain Memphis)
Miami (FL)
Navy
Northern Illinois
Notre Dame
Penn State
Pittsburgh
Rutgers
South Carolina
Southern Mississippi
Southwestern Louisiana (now Louisiana-Lafayette)
Syracuse
Temple
Tulane
Tulsa
Virginia Tech
West Virginia

tl;dr - Notre Dame sucks cocks
