Aside from Celtics and Pistons, what East teams could compete with the West? The Magic? No big men outside of Dwight to guard the paint, bad backcourt, and awful bench. Their paint would be trampled by the elite guards of the West. Raptors? Same thing, except you replace Dwight with Bosh, who's not a defensive anchor, and everyone else is a role player who can't create their own shots, which makes them two steps below the Magic. Cavs? Does anyone watch their games and see how bad their defense and rebounding have become? Until the playoffs they were playing so horrible nothing they do would push them to the playoffs had they play in the other conf. Wizards has injury-prone stars, and both the 76ers and the Hawks are young teams that knows how to hustle, but will get outworked by an established team.
And I don't see the disparity ending any time soon. Houston, Portland, and Sac-town are already showing their competitive edge despite injuries, and they could easily replace the aging powers in a couple of years, and both Seattle and Memphis is ahead of everyone else in grabbing lottery picks. If anyone from the East is going to rise next season, it would be either NJ, Miami, or Chicago.
