>FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal expects the Padres to open negotiations with the Cubs and Dodgers on a Jake Peavy deal at the general managers' meetings next week.

So....no one really wants him THAT much anymore? The asking price for him is extremely ridiculous.

if the padres weren't being faggots about it.

Dodgers don't want him. The Padres are going to ask the Dodgers for Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, and James Zell McDonald, and even more prospects for Jake Peavy because they play in the same division. Past.

Besides, Kershaw can be just as good as Peavy and he's only in his 2nd year. And McDonald has value as a 3rd guy in a rotation.

Seriously. I've read they were looking for about 5 players from the Braves at one point. Looks like the Padres are going to have to talk to AL teams soon.

give em ramirez, lee, soriano, and fukudome.

Nobody wants Lee, Soriano, and Fukudome.

Besides, Soriano and Fukudome has full no trade clauses.

The Braves gave up five (GOOD) players for Mark Teixeira.

At that point, Teixeira was older, signed for only a year and a half and his agent was Scott Boras.

Arm questions asside, Peavy is more valuable trade bait right now than Teixeira was last year.

Teixeria plays everyday, offers gold glove offense, and can hit for power. And wasn't an injury risk.

Peavy's been hurt the last year, his contract isn't as cheap as one would think with a $22 million option at the end of the year, and a no trade clause. Also, he's been making noise that he wants either another extension tacked on, or more money per year in the deal if he's get traded.

Like I said, If I'm the Dodgers, I pass.

Dodgers have good young pitching, and they're chasing the Manny sweepstakes.

Chicago is where once-great pitchers go to die.

Pitchers can add as much value to their team in one game as a position player can over five. Jake Peavy was one of the five most valuable players in baseball last year, the fact that they don't play every day is a ridiculous, short-sighted argument that doesn't look in to pitcher-batter matchups, which are the real format baseball should be judged by.

A hitter is guaranteed only 3 a game (if he's not pulled). That's 15 over five days. A pitcher is guaranteed at least 18 if he pitches 6 innings.

Talk on Chicago radio is that this is an unlikelihood, unless Hendry can work up some 3 team magic and ship Derrek Lee to a team who can compensate the Padres with good young pitching (which we don't have)

I'm all for it though

Why wouldn't that team just trade with Peavy straight up?

Here's the thing about the Padres and Peavy. The padres want other teams to trade for Peavy, a pitcher... for pitching. And not just any pitching, elite pitching. The type of pitcher that can be at Peavy level 2 or 3 years from now. Most teams that are interested in Peavy don't have the pitching the Padres want. And if you're a team that does have it, why would you want to spend over $60 million over 4 years with a $22 million option in the 5th year when you already have the good young pitcher that costs pennies on the dollar compared to Peavy?

No way this happens. As mentioned>>442893here, we don't really have the young pitching and we'd have to find a third team candidate. We'd probably have to swoop to pissburgh or something.

I don't see this deal happening unless Lee leaves the team, and then we'll have a hole at 1st (though Lee was just an average 1B last year) and there is no way Micah Hoffpauir can fill that hole. So, it just seems pretty unlikely. Honestly, I would just say "fuck it" and go after Derek Lowe (since he's probably the cheapest of the big name starters available - and honestly, he's like a number three starter in my opinion anyhow), trade for some bullpen help and a left-handed power hitting outfielder.

Jake Peavy. EVERYONE WANTS HIM. Except for the teams that can actually make a deal.

if lee is gone micah hoffpaur would be a welcome replacement man
you can only watch your 3 guy hit into so many double plays before you've had enough

His defense is much worse, he's kind of old for a prospect (28), and his major league sample size is awfully small. Replacing Lee with him would be a HUGE risk. Not worth it in my opinion.
