can someone explain to me how the "points" and "rankings" work?

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/rankingsindex

and like wat it means at the bottom it says

Others Receiving Votes
Oregon State 108, Virginia 71, Wake Forest 53, Boise State 33, Fresno State 11, Kentucky 11, California 8, Connecticut 8, Mississippi State 7, South Florida 6, Tulsa 5, UCF 4, Utah 2, Arkansas 1.

Dropped From Rankings
Virginia 20, Boise State 22, Arkansas 24, South Florida 25.

i would assume that right after the bowl season all the nostradamuses took a vote, and then in the time between that and the nfl draft underclassmen declared, and after the draft they took another vote. Hence teams, dropping out of the top 25.

I'm not justifying this bullshit, just explaining it. I blame it all on Ohians. The cancer that is killing /USA/.

No one really knows how points work, especially considering how there are now multiple polls (AP, USA Today, and now Harris). I DO know that they average these scores to get the BCS rankings. Not sure what else they use. And don't think I haven't tried figuring it out.

The problem isn't so much with that, as Pre-Season rankings are shitty, and completely arbitrary. But if OSU has a lot of fans, and gets a pre-season rank of 1, they're more likely to get in to the Big Game even if another team goes undefeated, like Auburn, or even Boise State.

Rankings, tho, Top 12 are guaranteed a BCS-Bowl spot. Which means a shit-ton of $$$.

Top 25 get numbers in front of them (ooh!). Others receiving votes are just, y'know, they got points too, but not enough to be top 25. If a top 25 team loses a game, they move down.

I'd suggest wiki, but even they can't make sense of this mess.

these rankings are important though, because although they shift during the season, they directly impact what teams get moved around where.

There are divisions in the NCAA. champs of divisions face each other. playoff system. win.

Those schools NOT in a division, buckle down and join one.

except if ur notre dame, then u dont even have to join a conference. U just wait to be overrated so u can land a BCS bowl bid to get slaughtered in

What do you mean nobody knows?

They take point differential, record, opponent record, rankings in all the major polls, conference record, conference ranking, conference standing and last week's point total and throw it into a constantly tweaked equation and out comes the BCS number.

Frankly you'd expect 111 or so college to be able to put together a decent algorithm.

BCS may be one thing.

But the two major T25 polls aren't that hard guys. I kinda had the system down and understood when I was in fourth grade. A bunch of writers submit their votes, which consist of their T25 teams. Each first place vote gets 25 points, second gets 24th...each 25th place vote gets one.

HURRRRRRRRRRR

Oh hi, we were 11-2 going into the postseason ranked 6th in the BCS. A team we beat and was ranked below us got into the BCS.
