Sounders FC sounds stupid..

While on the subject of MLS team names...

I'm still pissed off at the fact that Houston had to change their name to "Dynamo". God dammit, 1836 would have been alright in my book.
>> Anonymous
I fucking hate MLS names. I would support KC, since they're close, but I can't cheer for the goddamn Wizards.
>> Anonymous
Real Salt Lake has got to be the worst name ever.
>> Britannian Anonymous !4bbKDTSEQc

It does sound a bit stupid. But (according to wikipedia at least) locals really wanted to keep the 'Sounders' name for tradition's sake. Fair play to them.

And yeah, when are the MLS going to learn that nicknames should NOT be in the official team name, and should be chosen by the fans. Kansas should just be called Kansas City FC and be done with it. Let the fans call them the 'Wizards' if they want to, though I reckon it should be the 'Hurricanes' or 'Tornadoes' if you really must have a Wizard of Oz reference.

All MLS team names should be:

[City Name] FC

or

FC [City Name]

with an appropriate logo...

for instance, FC Dallas.

The name just reinforces the stereotype of everyone from Seattle being Frasier Crane.

>>60955
Yes, but they're trying to make it marketable, and thought copying Real Madrid would be cool. Fucking hell...
>>60957
Unless it's founded or from a mostly Spanish area it should just be [City Name] FC. Possibly with [City Name] United FC or [City Name] City, hell even 'Wanderers' is acceptable if they don't have a regular home ground early in their history. The only exception to the FC coming afterwards that I know of is if it's AFC [Name] which is 'Association Football Club [Name]' or 'AC [Name]' which is 'Athletic Club [Name]'. This also makes [Name] Athletic acceptable, as many clubs grew out of sports and athletic clubs in the old days.

>>60968
Shows how much those guys know then don't it? Real just means 'Royal' (Obvious!) So why they thought that'd be better than Salt Lake City FC or Utah United (SL is in Utah right?) I don't know.

Also for anyone who doesn't know Spanish, the reason FC comes before teams from Spain or latin backgrounds is because it means Futbol Club de [name] or Football Club of [Name]. I swear if Philadelphia get CF or something after their name I'm giving up. CF again is Spanish for Club de Futbol.

This post was brought to you by 'The more you know!' and 'Capt. Obvious' but I felt like saying it anyway.

Final word before bed, 'cos it's like 03:50 right now...

I'm not sure that America is going about things correctly with the whole MLS thing...If I'd been in charge (Thank god I'm not I hear all the yanks say) I would've taken the USA and Canada as more of a 'Continent' rather than two countries.

To expound simply, I would've set up State leagues, with many clubs in each state. The champions of these leagues would then play during the next season (or post season) in the National Cup (Like the UEFA Champions League in Europe), with the winners securing a place in the World Championships alongside the Libertadores and European Cup winners.

I feel that this system would help promote Football (Soccer) much better locally, instead of having only 2 big teams in Texas for example, you could have 18-20. Allowing everyone a chance to go and support their local teams and players, at least in the beginning.

i'll take the WNBA over MLS lol

To comment on this thread so far:
a) the Houston Dynamo got that name because "Houston 1836" was deemed as offensive to Mexicans living in Houston... as that is the year Texas seceded from Mexico.
b) "[City Name] FC" is fucking ridiculous. This is America, son. We don't have "Basketball Club L.A." or "Hockey Club Detroit." Gigantic, soulless billionaires run our lives, and they must TELL us what the mascot is, so we all know what merchandise to buy. Duh.
c) See below.
>> Red Machine D !h1LZxECEVA
>>60983

We have that. It's called the AYSO.
>> That Guy
>>60983
c) American interest in soccer just isn't that high. Like the WNBA or Arena Football before it, they start out with a few teams, grow fan interest, until it gets larger and larger. Most of our leagues aren't big enough to necessiate smaller, altenate league beneath them, though I really do think we're on a tipping point, except it would mean that billionaires who own teams like the Texas Rangers or the Arizona Cardinals would have to lose money, and they would never stand for that. In America, all billionaires are above the law, or any moral compass.

I DO hope the MLS eventually follows the European model, and gives the other American sports a real role model. But Canada will never have that many teams; they don't have enough people, nor money. Just look how the U.S. has raped the NHL and made it our bitch.
>> Anonymous
>>60985
Yeah, for me it's Three Major American Sports > College Football > College Basketball > WNBA > MLS > Arena Football > a sharp stick in the eye > Hockey

But that might change eventually; my city doesn't have an MLS team yet, but when they do, I'm more likely to buy a ticket for that than the other stuff.

>> Britannian Anonymous !4bbKDTSEQc

Same billionaires own stakes in Premier League clubs...Jesus...

Also, I wouldn't be so sure about Canada, when they hosted the U-18 World Championships last year there was a great turnout, every game was sold out and they're building purpose built stadia, plus the fans seem more 'up for it' than the US ones I've seen.

Montreal Impact are mooted to be joining the MLS in the near future. As a side note, the J-League in Japan has followed the same model as the MLS and is doing very well. It even has two divisions and another one is on the cards with the amount of applications they're getting from the smaller local clubs.

I'm off to bed, hope this is still here tomorrow. Would be good to read your opinions.

The MLS teams shouldn't have forced names on the fans, since the fans would eventually embrace their favorites anyway. So, the Sounders monicker is fine by me, since the fans wanted it. However, KC making "WIZARDS" the main element in the team crest is fucking ridiculous, and I hate it. LA was obviously making a Cosmos reference when they chose the "Galaxy" name, but I doubt anyone in LA gives a fuck about the Cosmos.

Also, the MLS and USL need to combine and implement a promotion/relegation system. The MLS also needs to scrap its transfer system and try again. We'll never have any decent youth academies in the states until the clubs have a financial motive to start them.
>> Anonymous
>>61087

MLS will never be taken seriously anyway as long as it serves as a training ground for US players.

Face it, 75% of all good US players eventually go to europe when they get good enough.

It makes sense too from a players stand of view, as going to europe is the only way to challenge the next part of your game.
>> Anonymous
>>61115
as long as the NFL, NHL, NBA, WNBA, PGA, Olympics, Curling, NCAA college football, NCAA mens and women's basketball, MLB, AFL, and the future AAFL exist I won't bother with MLS
>> Anonymous
>>61115
I don't have a problem with good players going to europe, since they'd still play for the US national team. This is also why I said the clubs need a motivation to start youth academies. I want the US to at least play in a world cup final before I die, and the MLS, as it stands, isn't going to make it happen.

Americans can't be bothered to name a team after it's created, we have other things to worry about. It's not like we walk over to the stadium from our flats and then walk to the pub after the game. Fags.

A relegation system would be awesome, but no billionaire would vote for that, and risk being relegated. I'd love to start my own soccer team and join one of the lower-tiered leagues... but American billionaires are assholes and won't let me play. Ask the Iraqis.

It speaks, but not in large of volumes as you think. A lot of it is credit to coaching woes, injuries (McBride's played in what? 4 games this season) and all around bad luck. True, they do suck (Fulham)but I wouldn't pin it all on Clint Dempsey...this is the team that signed Hameur Bouazza

>>61170
>>61154

yeah fulham, but at least i can say DaMarcus Beasley is on the Rangers and our keeper is on Everton. Also, we have some players in Bundesliga (two on Hannover 96, one on 1860 Munich, and one on Hansa Rostock), and some others here and there: one in Eredivisie, two on Derby (lol derby), and a couple on Reading as well.

I'm from Seattle and the Sounder name gotten chosen by write-ins. Sounders is our minorleague soccer team thats been here for like 30 years, and most of the players from this team are moving up to our MLS team. I've always kind of liked the name, being that i'm from the pugest sound area
>> Anonymous
>>61632

So will the other sounders be in the USL this season, or are they officially retired as a team? If so--this could be a good step in the foreign notion of relegation coming to our country.
