BYNUM TO HAVE KNEE SURGERY (1:56 a.m. ET)
Andrew Bynum will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and miss at least five weeks, ending his bid to be the Lakers's starting center on opening round of the playoffs.

Bynum complained about a sore knee early in camp, and an MRI revealed a torn meniscus. After trying to play through the pain, he decided surgery was the best option.

"I wasn't thinking about the playoffs or anything," Bynum said Saturday. "I was just thinking about my career, trying to be healthy and doing the things I know that I can do, which my knee won't let me do right now.

"Me being a big guy, I want to get it taken care of so I won't miss much time."

Bynum was competing with Kwame Brown and Chris Minh to fill the void at center left by the offseason trade of Shaq to the Miami Heat four seasons ago. By submitting to surgery, Bynum eliminated himself from contention.

Out five weeks??? Well, that still leaves the last seventeen weeks of the playoff he can play in.

not that surprising really. he was supposed to be back on the court by, or at least participating in practice. not to mention he was still jogging in the water after over 5 weeks from the injury. kinda screamed something was up with his knee. hopefully his knee won't continue to give him problems (second major knee injury?)

he still has to get conditioned into play, and he won't be there mentally. phil jackson won't play him until the finals as a reserve for desperate game minutes i bet.

Here's Bynum's latest injury:

January 14, 2008

After MRI tests and an examination by team doctor Steve Lombardo of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Group earlier today, it has been determined that Lakers center Andrew Bynum suffered a subluxation of the patella and a bone bruise of his left knee in last night’s game. Bynum is expected to be out a minimum of eight weeks. Bynum is expected to make a full recovery.

Bynum suffered the injury with 8:52 remaining in the third quarter of last night’s 100-99 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

While there have been reports that Andrew Bynum could be out for the season, everyone close to the Los Angeles Lakers is adamant that Bynum is on track to return. The second week in March is being circled as Bynum’s probable return date.

Bynum, who is one of the best up-and-coming centers in the NBA, still is dealing with swelling and hasn’t worked out extensively yet. However, unless he suffers a setback, he should be ready to roll in about a month.

When he returns, Bynum’s role will be a little different. With new bigman Pau Gasol in the fold, Bynum likely won’t have to carry much offensive load right off the bat. He can concentrate on rebounding, blocked shots and scoring garbage points around the basket.

Bynum, before his injury, was one of the biggest fantasy surprises on the season. When he returns, he should continue to be a very good fantasy player. Any lost points should be made up in other areas.
