Phillies pitching staff ERAs, BBs, and Ks:

Relief:
Ryan Madsen 1.00 ERA with 1 BB and 6 Ks in 9 innings
Brad Lidge 1.23 ERA with 3 BBs and 10 Ks in 7.1 innings
J.C. Romero 0.00 ERA with 3 BBs and 3 Ks in 2.2 innings
J.A. Happ 3.00 ERA with 2 BBs and 2 Ks in 3 innings
Chad Durbin 3.38 ERA with 2 BBs and 3 Ks in 2.2 innings.
Scott Eyre 3.86 ERA with 1 BB and 1 K in 2.1 innings.

That bullpen is sick...

Now, starting:
Cole Hamels 1.23 ERA with 6 BBs and 22 Ks in 22 innings (This man is the best pitcher in the post season... period)
Brett Myers 5.25 ERA with 7 BBs and 10 Ks in 12 innings.
Joe Blanton 3.27 ERA with 4 BBs and 11 Ks in 11 innings.
Jamie Moyer....... 13.5 ERA with 3 BBs and 5 Ks in 5.1 innings (8 earned runs off of Jamie... poor old man...)

That is a sick pitching staff, especially their relievers... if the rays want to hurt them they gotta do it on their starting pitching, because their bullpen has been lights the fuck out...
>> Anonymous
>>420003

yeah, that's great if Hamels can start every game. Alas, he cannot.

Meanwhile, here's the Rays' ERAs:

Garza 3.32 18K/10BB 19 IP
Sonnanstine 3.46 6K/2BB 13 IP
Shields 3.72 13K/6BB 19.1 IP
Kazmir 4.02 13K/8BB 15.2 IP

Bully

Ed Jackson 0.00 4K/2BB 2.1 IP
Trev Miller 0.00 1K/2BB 0.2 IP
David Price 0.00 4K/2BB 2.1 IP
Chadford 1.50 3K/2BB 6 IP
JP Howell 1.86 12K/3BB 9.2 IP
Wheeler 6.00 errr

I like how because of 2 post season games, the rays bullpen are now considered iffy, when they have had the substantially better bullpen all season and postseason. oh well, philfags need hope i guess
>> Anonymous
>>420041
I think they were when percival was injured and they tried several people out. The thing is, Price is going to be their closer. He's earned it. Even if he doesn't get it each night, they have enough weapons to put in to get the final 3-6 outs in any game and do it well.
>> Anonymous
>>420044
nah they were fine even then, with wheeler and balfour sharing save opportunities late in the regular season. they've had bad innings this post season and people think it nullifies how amazing they were before that. especially balfour, he was crazy good
>> Anonymous
>>420051
Oh, I don't dispute that. I think the difference people see though is that it's a team of pitchers, not an ace in the bullpen that doesn't fuck up.

I see a distinct difference in that relying on 1 player (or 2 in the case of the phillies) is not a good thing. Rays spread it around and all perform well. Their ace and 3rd pitcher will both pitch well, while Phillies ace will only do well.

This will be a good pitching matchup, and I see the Rays prevailing.

>> Anonymous
>>420054
Are you serious?? The phillies don't spread it out? First of all, I already conceided like 3 times that the Rays have better starting pitching and that Hamels is the only great starter the phillies have... but the phillies bullpen (and not just Brad Lidge) have all been lights out... clearly you haven't been following baseball this year if you think otherwise...

combine the eras of the bullpen...

Rays: around 2.47
Phillies: around 2.07

Starting:

Phillies: 5.81 (if you Moyer out of that equation, drops to 3.25)
Rays: 3.63

so there you have it, like I said earlier...
Starting: Rays>Phils
Bullpen: Phils>Rays...

There are only really 2 scary pitchers on the phillies right now... moyer and myers... they're the only ones giving up big numbers... and chad durbin is scary too at times... he makes me nervous as shit.

Anyone who thinks the phillies pitching talent isn't spread around hasn't been watching baseball recently...
>> Anonymous
I'd also like to point out that I'm not interested at all in either team... I just think that you are completely wrong when you say that the phillies only have one or two good pitchers... that's simply not the case.

This whole series is going to be a pitchers contest... especially with the way that both teams hit the ball... it's all gonna come down to who can keep the ball in the yard... not who can knock it out.

If there's a night where both pitchers are off their games... I wouldn't be surprised to see the most home runs in a single WS game record get shattered... both these teams go the yard A LOT...

I am not a troll, and I think the Rays will win. Why?
1. The anti-rest movement; the last two years the team who rested and waited as the other series continued lost in the WS.
2. Phillies being strikeout prone. This team swings for the skies to often, and with the exception of Matt Stairs, that doesn't seem to work all the time.
3. People are saying the Rays are this years Rockies. Who did the Rockies beat in the NLDS on their way to the WS last year? The Phillies.
4. The AL East is tougher than the NL East, and beating the White Sox and the Red Sox is tougher than beating the Brewers and Dodgers. The fact the Rays went all through that shows they are a tougher team.
5. In the same situation the Rays were in last night, Philly would have folded and allowed the rape to happen; the fact the Rays didn't fold and then won that game shows they actually are more focused on winning then the Phillies are.
6. The Phillies have only won one World Series in their whole teams history, and according to the math, only the team that plays and loses to the Globetrotters every night, the Washinfton Generals, has lost more games than the Phillies have all time, reguardless the league, reguardless the sport. That right there says they are fucked.

Just fyi, ERA is a very poor evaluator of the successes of bullpen pitchers for one big reason - inherited runs. Let's say that Jason Marquis is pitching an awesome game, and after 7 innings, he runs out of gas and gives up three straight singles. HOWEVER, he does not give up any runs. Lou Pinella decides to bring in Bob Howry to face the next batter, who promptly hits a triple, driving the other players in. Those three runs do not affect Howry's ERA - Marquis's ERA is affected. Does that make Jason Marquis a bad pitcher? Well, one could argue that, but in this situation, no, it does not. Does it make Bob Howry a good pitcher? Certainly not, because Bob Howry can only throw 85 MPH fastballs that Jeremy Hermida hits onto Sheffield Avenue. ERA is kind of a crappy stat anyway, so a more accurate comparison (especially between bullpens) is WHIP, walks + hits / innings pitched.

And you're forgetting home advantage. The Rays has the best record this year on that in the league IIRC.

Seriously people, saying the Rays is going to be the 2008 Rockies is stupid. Phillies has more of a chance to be the Rockies, disregarding history which means shit in a sport anyway, if only because their competition is not on the same level as what the Rays had to endure. The fact that the Rays managed to combo break a team well known to come out of the 3 games behind deficit says something.

Honestly if the Sawks won, you would be singing an entirely different tune.

>> Anonymous
>>420154
i didn't feel like looking up the whips, that's why included BBs just so you could see how many walks they were letting up as well as runs...

and also, yes, it does mean that marquis is a bad pitcher, and those earned runs damn well better be attributed to him... that's how ERA works... he put the runs on base, therefore the runs go against him...

ERA is a fine stat to use when you are looking to see how many runs are allowed... walks and hits don't always equate to runs... you can let up 3 hits an inning and then strike out 3 in a row and your WHIP goes up but your ERA doesn't, because you got yourself out of a jam... and the ability to get out of a jam is just as important as staving off hits and walks....

and speaking of that... my hat goes off to david price (that's his name, right?) for getting the rays out of that bases loaded situation in the 8th last night... that's good pitching...
