Good fans and bad fans Anonymous
A good fan is someone who sticks by a team during thin times, who understands the games, and can appreciate victory, rather than someone who is a "fan" for the social status. A good method of demonstrating this is by comparing fans of teams who play in the same cities.

New York Mets fans > New York Yankees fans
Machester City fans > Manchester United fans
Chicago White Sox fans > Chicago Cubs fans
LA Clippers fans > LA Lakers fans
QPR fans > Chelsea fans
And when they existed:
LA Rams fans > LA Raiders fans

The only sports where this does not hold is hockey and college sports, but those do not matter that much.

This is fact, not conjecture. Pic related, those are bad fans.

Fan of lesser team in same area > Fan of better team in same area

The more insignificant the team you cheer for, the better the fan you are. Extending this concept to its logical conclusion, the best fans root for teams that don't exist at all.
>> Anonymous
This makes sense, since teams that are not historically as successful will not attract bandwagon fans.

If you don't believe this is true, just imagine the average, or even a random Man U fan versus the same for Man City. You may like a popular team and be justified for doing so, but look at others around you.

I'll bite, I'm from LA when i say i like the Clippers and I hate the lakers. i usually get "lol, they suck" or "lol, but they arent any good" like winning percentage should be a main criteria for chosing a team to be a fan of.
>> Dela !!5exNHzSmikZ
Britfag here, I know Manchester United fans that supported them long before the glory days, through the 50's and 60's glory days, through the grim 70's and 80's dominated by the blue half of Manchester and through the 90's and 00's as one of the dominant forces in world football. I know City fans who couldn't give a toss about if the team lose but suddenly they have mega-rich owners and are the biggest City fans ever.
>> cubsfag
>>358519Chicago White Sox fans > Chicago Cubs fans

Have you ever met a White Sox fan? They're usually too busy beating each other or the umpires up to actually watch the game.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but if you look at the attendance records the cubs have a consistently high attendance at wrigley whereas soxfags only go to games when the team has a winning record (or they didn't spend it all on beer)

You can call cubs fans sick twisted masochistic douchenozzles if you want, but fairweather fans? No.

None of the teams I root for have traditionally been good (Seattle). We have a few good years here and there, and sometimes it's hard to keep the faith, but if you're a good fan you have got to do it. I love my teams.

OP's point is that if you spot someone at random who says they are a Yankees fan, you are going to be a lot less inclined to think that they actually know baseball compared to someone who says they are a Mets fan.

Alabama>Auburn
I've been an Alabama fan since I moved here in '79. I have cheered for them in the Bear Bryant era and the '93 championship team, and have stuck by them during coaches changes, scandals, and 5-6 seasons. i have also suffered through 6 straight losses to Auburn and have watched many casual fans jump on the Auburn bandwagon, which is fucking disgusting. But the Tide is turning, my friends, you can feel it in the air, you can see it on the "Auburn fan's faces.
>> Anonymous
>>358629
I guess its because if you are still watching hockey these days, you pretty much are a hardcore fan. Plus there isn't that many comparisons you can make, but I can try as I have been to many states and made sure to see as many arenas as possible during my travels.

In Cali its pretty much Shark>Kings>Ducks. I was there when the Ducks were still a joke and the five fans that were actually in the stands switched alliances halfway through the freaking game.

Philadelphia>Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh is pretty much the bandwagon team of the NHL.

I can't judge Rangers and Islanders fans, mostly because I have yet to actually meet an Islanders fan. I can feel safe in saying Buffalo>Both NYC teams if we extend to the entire state.

Panthers>Lightning, although that may have changed since Tampa Bay has went back to suck and everyone jumped ship. I didn't respect the fans at all during the Calgary series.

And for reasons that should be obvious, I will respectfully decline talking about any of the Canadian teams.

I agree with OP's definition of "good" and "bad" fans, but you'll find a large enough core of "good" fans behind any major team to neutralize any "teamX>teamY" inequality, and make it an inconclusive argument. That being said, the cultural baggage fans sometimes carry to the games can hinder their image, which is why, "good" and "bad" fan aside, we can all safely say Yankees or White Sox fans are obnoxious and detestable.

tl; dr: Fuck the Yankees, fuck the White Sox, and their respective fans.

i live in birmingham and there are hardly ANY bandwagon auburn fans.

ask the average alabama fan where they go to school and they tell you uab, samford or montevallo.

also, yeah...and when alabama beats auburn this year. how many of those same auburn bandwagon fans are gonna flip and go for alabama...you really want those people in your fan base.
