Oops. Laptop had a seizure.

So, /sp/ what's your opinion on NASCAR?

Sport, or not a sport?
>> Anonymous
The cars should be the athletes makin millions of dollars and have endorsements, because they do all the work.
>> Anonymous
But, the cars don't make themselves, nor do they drive themselves.
>> Anonymous
>>8407
yet it is the cars that go the high speeds and win the driver
ok this is a horrible arguement but still nascar =/= sport
>> Anonymous
nascar more like left turn bonanza
>> Anonymous
It's a sport, but the drivers aren't great athletes- though, the do need reaction speed and stamina.
>> Anonymous
take all the precautions from nascar and it becomes a sport.

Kinda, at least it's not fucking wrastlin'.

I just can't get into it. I tried to watch it with friends when I was in college, but couldn't find the appeal. As for it being a sport, I don't know. It's definitely a competition, but maybe not a sport.
>> Anonymous
NASCAR rocks.

I would never try to convert somebody who thinks that sports are only athletics, because they will never get it.

But if you are into it and have rooting interest, watching a race is just as good or better than watching an NFL or NHL game.

Driving around in an oblong doesn't seem like a sport to me.
>> Anonymous
G-Forces
Extreme heat inside the cars
Good mental condition

Are the main things that make NASCAR a sport.

As for me, I've been a fan since 2001 (Been collecting diecast since I was a kid, watched a few races here and there before going full-time in 2001.), and I fucking love it. Sure, it can be shit sometimes, but it's great stuff to watch most of the time (And ALL OF THE TIME at Superspeedway races).

The ''500'' at the end of most race titles stands for the amount of miles you faggot.
>> ????????(????)?????? !!!!
>>8617
Many tracks are exactly a mile in length.
>> Anonymous
>>8619

Ranges from:

0.7 (IIRC) to 2.5. Most are 1.5, which usually equals a 400 mile race (The lone exception would be the Memorial Day race at Charlotte, which is 400 laps and 600 miles. It's 334 laps and 500 miles in the fall, though.)

Notice how badly almost all the drivers drive at circuits like Watkins, or Infineon.
That's because they don't have any true racing skill. Drafting, and going in circles for 3 hours isn't skill.
>> Anonymous
>>8645
Yeah, I noticed how all those open wheel guys like Montoya and Hornish and Franchitti can just show up at Daytona or Texas or Bristol and just blow the field away, because winning races on ovals is so easy!
>> Anonymous
>>8654
It's because they get bored. They're used to some excitement.
>> Anonymous
>>8662
Excitement? Like passing?

I agree. Nascar comes before any other sport for me.

I've been sick of this argument for years...but more so because it seems EVERYONE has to determine if it is a sport or not just by mentioning it. Who cares? really.

I always just say "sports and racing" when referring to my pastimes or interests. they're very, very different animals and yet very alike. it really shouldn't matter.
>> Anonymous
I concern to it as a competitive event, but not a sport. :P

Know what would make me watch NASCAR again? If all the drivers weren't driving the same goddamn car. And that goes for Fords, Chevys, Dodges...they are all the same. Tube chassis, +/-750hp V8, and then a body shell with your choice of stickers to make it a Monte Carlo or a Charger or a Taurus or whatthefuckever Ford is racing now.

If you want to have them be purpose-built race cars, fine. But let the teams put some development into them like F1 or ALMS does.

But what I want, and what you all should want too, is this: TEAMS HAVE TO RACE CARS OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINES.

"But Anon, that would mean there would be Charger SRT8s leading a bunch of shitbox FWDs for at least a season!"

I know...it'd be kinda funny too (and don't give me shit about the G8, I know about it but nobody knows if it'll do 177mph like the Charger SRT8 yet).

And once again, if a company wanted to actually win, they would have to give you and me cars with balls.

That's how NASCAR started, and it stayed that way for years. "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday," the saying used to go. Maybe if they did this, they could say it without shame again.

Pic related, Aussie V8 Supercar is what NASCAR could be...
>> Anonymous
NASCAR was about 500 times more fun if you were in a sim racing league.

FUCK YOU EA
>> Anonymous
I think you have to be a masochist to actually like nascar. Either that or a total redneck.
>> Anonymous
More of an endurance challenge than a sport. I don't know, I don't like it. It's not the going around in circles part, but just that it takes so damn long!
