FACT: Most of Gretzky's scoring records will never be broken. If you think this new wave of young players has a chance you're delusional.

This does have a slice of truth to it. Back in the 80's, most goalies were still using standup style, which left the bottom corners of the net open, and in those days, shooters still shot low along the posts. A good goalie back then would have a 3.20 GAA, a figure that is downright embarassing nowadays. In the late 80's, a lot of goalies switched to butterfly style, which required goalies to drop to their knees, making low shots easier to block, and shooters in those days weren't used to shooting five-hole as they are now.

Also, defensive systems were a lot more primitive back then. In the 90s, wing locks and zone traps were popular, allowing for more turnovers and less scoring. They're trying to remedy that now, but to me it still looks like the same game.

Standup is considered obsolete nowadays. Some goalies will use standup moves, but will not use a purely standup style. The last great standup goalie was Mike Richter.

and the fact that goalie pads used to just cover the players body.
now they double his body size so most goalies can sit on their ass and let the pucks hit them.
oh yeah, and gloves that you actualy had to close to catch the puck. some of those old gloves can fit in the basket of new ones

Agreed, it's the quality of defensemen and defensive systems that changed the game. How often did you see guys in the 80s get burned to the outside? A ridiculous amount of times. I watch old games now and laugh at the the defensemen's lack of skill.

Has anyone considered just using an enormously obese man as a goalie?

There was an article on it a while back, with amusing results. Google it or something, because I can't remember where it was from.

The idea is jokes (and so is the article), but the fans would riot harder than the players if it ever happened.
