If Mauer played in Boston, or New York, he'd already be on his 3rd or 4th MVP.
>> HKK !h7MHU9L/Oo
He should have won in 2006, there's no doubt about that. Last year, he was hurt and this year the AL was so mediocre for hitters that anyone could have won. I'll admit that Mauer was far more deserving that Pedroia though.

If Halladay played in Boston, or New York, he'd already be on his 3rd or 4th Cy Young.

CLIFF LEE didn't play at MVP level for two months.

How did Morneau finish higher than him? I mean Morneau is considered a "slugger" and his SLG % was under .500?!
>> HKK !h7MHU9L/Oo

He had one month that wasn't outstanding and that was June. Lee didn't have the greatest pitching season in MLB history but he was better on the mound than anyone was at the plate.

The voters are morons and only paid attention to his RBI numbers.

No he wasn't, seriously its as if you're not taking defense in your analysis at all.

Joe Mauer at catcher is more valuable than Cliff Lee as a pitcher. Mauer plays everyday, he gives a great offense at the most important defensive position, and he has to handle a young pitching staff that didn't include Liranao or Santana.

All Cliff Lee had to do was show up every five days and pitched.

That plays everyday and important defensive position bullshit is what won Jimmy Rollins MVP last year.

I am very curious to hear your opinion on Lidge getting the other two first-place votes in the NL MVP race

>>476391
I hate most of the AL, but Mauer is one of the few AL players that I love watching.
>> HKK !h7MHU9L/Oo

Lidge was the best closer in the NL this season, nobody can argue that but to say he was the player period in the NL is something I can't even begin to comprehend. I'd like to see the ballots of the two guys who voted for him. I'm sure they have some retarded shit like Carlos Delgado third.

If I played in Boston or New York not only would I have 8 MVP awards but I would be the first ever Player/Hall of Famer/Jesus.

Being underrated sucks.

Jimmy Rollins only posted a 118 OPS+ and plays an average shortstop.

Joe Mauer posted a 137 OPS+ this year(Morneur actually posted the same OPS+), and FUCKING PLAYS CATCHER.

THE ONE FUCKING POSITION THAT IS ALMOST EVERYONE HAS A DEFICIT AT.

The playing everyday argument is not bullshit when,
1) He's playing the difficult position of catcher.
2) He's also the best fucking player in the AL

Jesus Christ HKK, get your head out of your ass, and realize that Cliff Lee did not have the best year out of every god damn player in the AL. Wins aren't that fucking important retard.

So let me ask you this: more MVP worthy Howard or Lidge?

"This season Mauer became the first catcher in major league history to win two batting titles. He finished second in the American League in on-base percentage. He won a Gold Glove. Measured by Baseball Prospectus' Wins Above Replacement Player (which considers defense), Mauer finished a close second to Pedroia. Measured by Bill James' Win Shares (which also considers defense, along with clutch hitting), Mauer finished first in the American League, with Pedroia a couple of wins behind. Measured by Win Probability Added (no defense, but clutch hitting especially), Mauer finished first in the league, with Pedroia eighth."

Cliff Lee winning MVP is as silly as Brandon Webb winning Cy Young.

I get what you're saying. Not once did I bash Joe Mauer in this thread but why should a guy get extra credit for playing catcher over someone like A-Rod who doesn't? Was Mauer better than A-Rod at the plate this year? Not really:

A-Rod: 594 PA, .302 BA, .392 OBP, .573 SLG, 150 OPS+, 116 RC
Mauer: 633 PA, .328 BA, .413 OBP, .451 SLG, 137 OPS+, 101 RC

Mauer had a great year, as did A-Rod, Bradley, Hamilton, Youkilis, Cliff Lee, Nick Markakis and a few other guys in the AL but the problem is that while each of them was really good in one area they faltered heavily in another; the field was basically even when you factor in everything. Nobody was dominant across the board and there weren't only a couple of guys who stood out, it was around ten or so. This is the first time in my life I've had this situation happen for an MVP vote. If Mauer would have won today, I wouldn't have had anything resembling a problem with it. He deserved it more than Pedroia and Morneau.

Lidge.

I didn't think WPA% was an actual stat. I learned something today.

Also, there will always be votes for Closers for Cy and MVP, because there are stupid people in the world.

People who think the Save stat = a Win.

a win = worthless stat

Not a Starting Pitcher 'Win'.

An actual won game. Like, the team would have lost had the closer not come in and gotten three outs without giving up 3 runs.

Because catcher is a much harder position to field over 3rd base? You're seriously underrating the requirements to play catcher everyday. Just squatting for 3 hours everyday would take a strenuous amount of strength from you, deflecting from your offensive stats.

A-Rod also plays a mediocre 3rd base while Mauer plays a fantastic defensive catcher. Even if you move Mauer to 3rd base(which they'll eventually has to do when he's older) Mauer would wipe A-rod out defensively.

And I have an issue of voting Cliff Lee over Joe Mauer, the main reason is that you think Lee only has to be very good to win the MVP, while Mauer has to surpass or meet his 2006 stats. Yes, Cliff Lee had a good year, but it was only that, it wasn't historically great and unless a pitcher puts up a year like Pedro 1999, a pitcher shouldn't win MVP.
