So /sp/, I've been thinking of taking up Kendo and joining a dojo. What should I expect?

Do any of you have any experience with Kendo? How is it? What should I expect from lessons? Are the people there generally friendly (from your experience atleast)?

Any wisdom is appreciated.

Heavy armor, stiff movement, this is a sport where experience is valued over youthful energy.

applications in real life: great for reflexes

cons: doesnt actually teach you how to use a sword.

overall experience: unless youre obsessed with watching samurai movies or your generally interested in learning kendo for kendo then its going to be boring and you'll find urself wondering why you ever started

take for me. i quit cuz i was sick of hitting shit with a stick. i play judo and now im a tough motherfucker who throws ppl on mats. how cool is that.

kendo < judo

I'd go with Kenjutsu over Kendo. Kenjutsu is mainly tought through catas, while Kendo is more duel and sports type. But it does have some really stupid rules.

Expect many blisters on your first week. Lessons are usually stretches, warmups, put on gear, exercises, end with sparring. Don't expect to get your gear for awhile and it's going to cost you. Don't expect to learn how to fight with a sword. It's more of a sport now than an actual martial art. Nonetheless some schools do teach you how to use a sword once you reach your dan/blackbelt/firstdegree/etc.
