Football/Soccer is confusing Anonymous
Dear Eurofags of /sp/:

I'm an Amerifag who has found himself watching more and more Football/Soccer/Whatever you want to call it.

In turn, I have no idea how the leagues work. I know there are the UEFA cup, Champions cup, and I guess two more from what I understand? Could someone be nice enough to explain it to me?

I'm an American too, and I don't mean to insult you or offend you...if I was more ambitious and had time before class, I would go ahead and make a nice post about it. But wikipedia does a great job at explaining it. And when I got into soccer a few years ago, it was that site that really helped me understand the complex calendar and the major domestic leagues, as we only get the EPL and Serie A here.

It really is a great resource.

also here: http://www.uefa.com/

champions cup = top competition
uefa cup = those that failed to qualify for champions, and some other second tier teams from the same leagues that have one or two guaranteed spots in the CL

oh, amerifag here also, just been watching longer

correcting myself, the clubs that get to compete for the remaining spots in champions cup (ie 3rd and 4th spots in the EPL) get put into the euefa cup automatically

Usually two domestic cups and one domestic league per country. Based of league position and amount of european slots (which is based on the leagues rank) the top teams or cup winners get into Europe at different stages.

Those who don't qualify can apply to the inter-toto cup which allows the team with the top league position that has applied but not qualified for europe to compete for a position in the UEFA Cup. This will be defunct after next seasion.

The European competitions have two/three qualifying rounds based on the rank of the league and the teams position in that league, then a group stage then another knockout stage that usually goes last 16, quarter, semi, final.

The winners of the UEFA Cup and Champions league also play each other later to determine who is best and goes onto the world club competition in which they face the best from all continents.

In depth enough? :3

Oh and i forgot that those placed third in the 8 champions league groups get to go into the knockout rounds of the UEFA Cup.

Am I the only one who thinks the European way of sports leagues is quite "American Dream". I mean look at FC United, if they win the play-offs on Saturday in three years since their creation they'll have gone up three levels in pyramid system.. If they can keep it up 15 years time they could be in the Prem, let alone the football league!

I dunno... Just seems very "American Dream" type stuff, to me at least, if you get what I'm saying.

Frankly, I have no idea what the heck you are on about.

He wants clubs to stay in their low shitty divisions regardless of the results they obtain.

UEFA Cup = Dogshit competition for teams not good enough to compete in the CL

actually its just a good excuse for good teams to play other good teams in different countries.

>actually its just an average excuse for average teams to play other average teams in different countries.

CL is for good teams
UEFA is for average/shit teams
Intertoto is for gay teams

I think a better term would be Darwinian.

Its interesting to say the least. Some American teams just stay stagnant and because they dont need to compete, spend money, etc. to stay in the league. They just kick back, suck ass, and rake in the advertising and revenue sharing. A team like the Clippers would be a minor league operation, or better out of business, if the American leagues did things like this.

it's not the top teams, but those that fell out of the top of their respective leagues, still excellent football, and they do different weekdays than the CL

It's been far more interesting than the CL this season with a lot of big teams in it.

But liverpool are the prime example of hypocricy, it's shit now but when they won it in 2001 it was the best shit ever.
