What is considered "young"?

Players under 30. But a couple of odd things, no player over 26 is listed, and the younger you are, the higher you seem to make it on the list.

Pujols is 28, and is clearly the best player but he's not listed.

anything older than Brandon Webb.

>the younger you are, the higher you seem to make it on the list.

The only reason I can think of is they have more time to mature and get better before they hit their prime.

Also, it doesn't seem to take defense into account. Prince Fielder's a hack at first base.

If we're taking defense and offense together, I'd say Wright would be first or Lincecum.

Bill James may be smarter than me, but I'd like to see his reasoning on why Fielder's first. He didn't have the best year in 2007, or 2008.

To be honest, Hanley Ramirez should be #1 at the very least higher then Fielder.

JOBA CHAMBERLAIN motherfucker, do you speak it?
>> Anonymous
>> 15. Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners pitcher, age 22

Probably should be top ten. I'd rank him higher than Soria or K-rod at least. Starting pitching is worth more than closers.

I speak it and it still means overrated hick.

Has James seen Fielder play defense? He's pretty abysmal and has a hard time getting on base. That said, he's still a very good talent but I'd rather have a few guys before I'd take him.

No Soto? Come on now. He looks pretty good! Though the 30 here are damn impressive.

One good year, and one good minor league year.

Yeah, Fielder's probably a top guy but, I'd have a hard time putting him in the top five. I don't think Bill James is accounting for position either.

Sorry, but Soto does not belong ahead of a single player on that list.

That's why I said a few guys, including Miguel Cabrera who is somehow all the way down at 23.

Drop Fielder several and then pick the new top three with your eyes closed and you're pretty close. Also, Hamels should really be top 5.

hey bill james, wtf

"To achieve his inventory, James ... employs two widely used statistics - Runs Created for position players and Runs Allowed for pitchers - as the basis for comparison. He makes several adjustments, including for injuries suffered during the year and the differences in predictability between pitchers and position players, and then takes into account the number of years the player should be at his peak performance.

About the Dodgers, James said that "they have very impressive young talent in Kemp, (Andre) Ethier, (Chad) Billingsley, (James) Loney and (Clayton) Kershaw, Broxton and Martin, but their issue is depth."

I'm not endorsing these rankings - there seem to be some obvious flaws - just presenting them for discussion."

How do you have a list of Under Thirty players and not have Pujols at the top?
>> Anonymous
>>426639
I think it's a 26 and under list. 27 is the typical power-burst age.
>> Anonymous
>>426642

No, its a 30 and under group, but Bill James is putting a lot of emphasis of years under 30. Its why Matt Kemp (He's 23) is ranked 7th on the list, despite other players having more productive years.

Soto isn't on this lost? Fucking fail. He should be top 5.

Soto is better than a lot of them.. and Fielder should not be number 1

Did Bill James actually rank them? Or did he just spout off 25 names in no particular order and you decided to number them and troll my balls?

>>426705

Bill James ranked them. He had Fielder first last year as well.
>> Anonymous
>>426510

No, he's listed as under 30. Wether he is or not has been debated for a while, as most think hes actually 31 right now.
