Why do you need 70 people on a football team? In b4 troll because I'm not. I just don't see why you need 50+ people to be on a team for a sport that requires 15 or so on the field at any given moment. Picture unrelated

Since I guess it wasn't obvious enough before, I guess I'll say it now:

I don't understand football, I've never really watched it before, please explain.

53 is the max when the season starts. Every spot (except kicker and punter) have at least one backup incase of injury, which is an often occurance in football.

Plus...

Rookies and first-year players $285,000
Second-year players $360,000
Third-year $435,000
Fourth-year $510,000
Fifth- through seventh-year $595,000
Eighth- through tenth-year $720,000
Eleventh-year and longer $820,000

So a third string veteran QB can earn at least $820K a year holding a clipboard.

Why doesn't the team just scrub some older guys and keep 3-4 reserves then? It'd save money if nothing else. Or do they go by contract? If they do go by a contract, why does their pay go up each year?

They need to practice. That's at least 22 men right there in order to have a practice. Now, the 1st offense team does not play the 1st defense team probably, so that is 44. Then, they also need backups and special teams players.

Football players need more people on a team because injuries occur so frequently

Also bear in mind that the guys moving the ball and the guys playing defense are two different sets of 11 guys (to say nothing of the kicker and punter).

Nobody has given that good of an answer. There is a limit of 53, and all positions have backups (except kickers and punters) but you have many people have specialize in special teams, certain defensive packages, different offensive sets, etc. You also have far more injuries than in any other sport, both minor and major.

That is what they do. His example of a third-stringer being an eleven year player never happens; teams always prefer younger players to older players. They are on contract; when it is up, they can re-sign for more, or less.

In the NFL only 45/46 players are active for each game. That's basically a backup at each position and some kickers.

One of the inactive players is the designated 3rd QB, who cannot enter a game before the 4th QB as anything other than a permanent sub; i.e. if you bring in the emergency QB in the 3rd, the starter and the backup cannot reenter the game.
