Amerifag here (or, "United Statesian").

What are the top five most popular pro-sports in your country? In America, in descending order, they are:

1) NBA
2) NFL
3) MLB
4) NHL
5) Dunno lol

you do realize that both NASCAR and the freaking WWE are more popular in the united states than the nhl, right?

I'd say eating is the most popular thing in america but it doesn't count either.

Nascar and WWE a sport?

Whereas in Africa, eating comes in 4th and everybody is dead.

In other news, it's actually even worse than>>72540knows (though there are some interesting variations): http://harrisdealerpoll.com/harris_poll/index.asp?PID=866

Now, of course, all standard caveats apply re: "Lies, Damn Lies, Statistics, LOL" - but in terms of professional leagues, there's a plausible case to be made for the following order:

1) Professional football (by an enormous margin).
2) Professional baseball
3) NASCAR (yeah, yeah "not a sport lulz", I'll believe it as soon as somebody convinces me Cricket is more athletically rigorous - oh, time for tea?).
4) Hockey
5) Pro basketball

Yes, astonishingly, only 4% of those polled named the NBA as their favorite sport, less than the 5% who said so for hockey. This means several things.

1) The NBA is almost certainly still more popular in America given that the poll only asks "most favored" status, without giving weight to other preferred sports. In other words, the NHL has more #1 votes, but I'll bet the NBA got WAY more #2s and #3s - and it's pretty much a given that basketball has a much greater viewership than hockey, both live and on tv.

2) That having been said, during the glory era of the Chicago Bulls the sport had 3x as many 'fans' as it does today. That held strong through 2003 (the general ending of the Los Angeles Lakers dynasty), then plummeted. I do not believe this to be an accident.

3) Bud Selig should be fired (but we all already knew that, I'm sure).

And again, I would like you to convince me it's an actual "sport" moreso than NASCAR. I don't care how popular it is. That's the POINT - the person to whom I was replying was claiming that NASCAR was not a sport, and hence its popularity didn't matter.

I submit that cricket is in fact a sport (and a very popular one). NASCAR, too, is a sport (as is IndyCar - NASCAR's just the general whipping boy of /sp/ because of the "Deliverance" image it presents), and within the United States is quite popular.

Ohh, okay. The USA has "floor hockey," which basically -is- hockey indoors w/o skates or ice. I've seen it played with a ball like floorball, but more often it's played with a puck anyway.

In America's case it depends on the area, Hockey isn't popular in states without ice for obvious reasons.

Football is usually the top sport, but in the North East Baseball is bigger. The Yankees are worth more than any team in any sport anywhere ever because of their popularity.

Hockey is huge in the North East and Mid West and in our second most populous state (Canada)

Hey Soccer Fags,

Here's the harsh reality; basketball is going to overtake your pathetic, slow paced, flop filled, tie fest in the next few decades. Believe it or not, people actually enjoy to watch athletes score. You know, put the ball in the net. The internet and foreign player influx is letting everyone on the planet see the truly beautiful game being played at it's highest level. You think some 10 year old boy wants to watch Becks take corner kicks or Lebron dunk on someone? You think a playoff game being decided because some dumb-ass heads the ball in the wrong direction is indicative of world class competition?
You think draws are why people watch COMPETITIVE sports?

You had a good run soccer, but basketball is now the world's sport. And soon, nobody will give a shit about another "thrilling" 1-1 draw.

TL,DR; Basketball is the world sport of the future. Over/under set at 20yrs

What about things like gymnastics?
