>> Kilgamayan !2BklmILFiE
>>121382

A-Rod's OPS this year: .899

Nothing special this year.

A-Rod's career OPS: .966
Manny's career OPS: .999

Manny's the better career hitter.

Other notable AL hitters with a decent amount of experience:

David Ortiz: .939
Jim Thome: .969
Travis Hafner: .932
Gary Sheffield: .915
Magglio Ordonez: .894
Vladimir Guerrero: .964
Jason Giambi: .947
Derek Jeter: .848
Bobby Abreu: .906
Frank Thomas: .979 (I still remember when this guy was an absolute fucking nightmare back in the early 90s)
Ichiro Suzuki: .813
Michael Young: .792
Vernon Wells: .808
Scott Rolen: .878

Whoops, Manny's had a better hitting career than all of them.

Good Lord, people, if you're going to troll me at least do it intelligently. Or just go back to throwing 18-1 around everywhere, that might work.

Lemme get this straight Kilgamayan? You'd rather have Manny on the Sox over A-Rod?
>> Anonymous
>>121443
Yes. A-Rod can't get it done in the clutch. He has more power. But Manny is by far a better overall hitter. You'd rather have A-Rod because he's younger and has more years ahead of him. But if you're talking about one year or one at bat, I'd take Manny any day.

If I had the OPS+ formula readily available I'd whip it out and rerank all those players I named, but I don't so I have to live with plain ol' OPS for now.

>>121443

Ah, now that's a different question entirely.

Manny is statistically the better career hitter, but A-Rod plays a tougher position, is a better defender, has more speed, is 6-7 years younger and would be replacing Julio "The Automatic Double Play" Lugo where Manny's removal would end the outfield logjam created by Crisp and Ellsbury.

Therefore, if player loyalty is removed from the equation, I would gladly take a Ramirez-for-A-Rod straight-up trade.

On-base plus slugging (OPS) is a baseball statistic calculated as the sum of a player's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.[1] The abilities of a player both to get on base and to hit for power, two important hitting skills, are represented, making it an effective way of measuring the player's offensive worth. An OPS of .900 or higher in Major League Baseball puts the player in the upper echelon of offensive ability. Typically, the league leader in OPS will score near, and not necessarily below, the 1.000 mark.

This argument is stupid... yeah, the stadium is smaller, but that also means every other team they play can hit the ball out of the during the 82 games they play at home. Have you ever heard of a stat called... Park Factor?

Park Factor compares the rate of stats at home vs. the rate of stats on the road.
A rate higher than 1.000 favors the hitter. Below 1.000 favors the pitcher.
PF = ((homeRS + homeRA)/(homeG)) / ((roadRS + roadRA)/(roadG))

Philadelphia has a PF of 1.009... ranked 16 out of 31 teams.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor?season=2008

Philly home: 25 games... 15-11
Philly away: 28 games... 15-13

Just face the facts, the Phillies are a good team.
