Fishing as a sport, whether it be bass, fly, deep sea, or even cane pole.

Please discuss.

HOLY MACKEREL!

There's actually a lot to fishing that people who either fish casually or don't fish at all don't even realize.

Some of it is general knowledge, things like where to fish, what bait to use, what rod/reel combo to use, what line to use. Also, in the knowledge department is how to catch the fish. You need to reel in different fish in different ways. But this is also a skill. For example, a white crappie has a very thin mouth, so you have to be delicate so that they don't tear and you can get them close enough to net.

There is also an unbelievable amount of stamina necessary to do fish. You're out in a boat, in the hot sun all day, trying to outsmart a fish. Its very tiring. Then, you have to fight to reel the thin in for hours sometimes. When it comes to fighting, they can last anywhere from 15 minutes with a drum, to hours with a marlin or something.

So yes, fishing is a sport.

I like to fly fish, though I don't know what I'm doing and never catch anything. But it's nice to get outside once in a while.
>> Anonymous
If you have to be drunk to do it, it's not a sport.

i can't badmouth fishing, i don't go often but i was taught by dad when i was younger. had my first beer when fishing too.

best time fishing was off cape cod. a good dosage of mushrooms makes it less boring to be sure

This man speaks the truth. There is a lot of knowledge and skill necessary to really fish.

Sure, just about anyone can catch a fish. Tie a hook to a line and toss. But, to really sport fish, you need knowledge and skill.

I'm sure fishing is a lot more complicated than it looks, but it is not very much of a spectator sport. Just let people enjoy their own sport without broadcasting it on TV, please.

I cannot properly fish if I have been drinking.

A cigar is another question however. But alcohol, no. Plus, it is actually illegal to boat and drink. You get a OWI. Don't let the game warden catch you drinking.

Sports=Game with Score where two or more people compete

Fishing=/=Sport

So diving/discus/track/etc are not sports?

I agree that fishing is not a sport, but I believe a sport would be some sort of physically based competition, where the winner is decided through some sort of empirical means.

sonar and luck won't help an overzealous person not tear a fish's mouth.

It does take skill to fish. EOS.

Less of a sport than skateboarding. At least those little idiots hurt themselves dropping from high in the air.

Flying is a sport nigger.

Well, I guess this settles it. Anything that takes any skill at all is now a sport if you somehow make it competitive.
>> Anonymous
>>121393
okay then. what is a sport?
>> Anonymous
>>121406
Has to be:

(1) Athletic
(2) Competitive
(3) Objective (not dependent on judging)
(4) Popular

If something is neither (1) or (3), it is art.
If something isn't (3), it is performance art.
If something is (3) but not (4), it is a game.
If something isn't (2), it is an activity.

The thinking being that a sport consists of the best athletes in a difficult, competitive game with objective results.

I like where you are going, except for the number 4. Just because something is 1, 2, and 3, but not 4, it fails to be a sport?

If so, what is Curling? Disc Golf?
>> Anonymous
>>121434
Mostly agree, although there will be some things that never fit perfectly. For instance, greco-roman wrestling has judges.
>> Anonymous
>>121444
My thinking there is that if a game is not sufficiently popular, it doesn't attract enough athletes to make it truly competitive.

Obviously we could argue all day over what is sufficient.

For example, against my better judgment, I accept that some auto racing (like NASCAR) is a sport, because there are so many skilled drivers trying to make it to the big time that it mitigates the fact that driving isn't, shall we say, a very athletic endeavor.

But like you said, curling isn't what I'd call a sport, because so few compete in it whatever athletic talent it does require, isn't required in very high proportions.

Likewise, you can call something (like fox hunting or yachting) "sporting" or "sportive," but that doesn't make it A sport, only a game or activity.
>> Anonymous
>>121451
Also true. Boxing is another one, where the match can be decided by knockout (objective result) or by points (art appraisal).
>> Anonymous
>>121472
You make a valid point, however I respectfully disagree.

I don't believe that popularity plays a part.
>> Anonymous
>>121451

referees =/= judges
>> Anonymous
>>121472
Dude, Curling is totally a sport. So is yachting, in the sense of a regatta.

Popularity doesn't matter. Just because it isn't popular does not make it less a sport.
>> Anonymous
>>121501
It does make it less a sport.

I could invent a game called stone hurling where we pick up unbelievably heavy stones, throw them long distances in trash cans, and the winner is the person who threw their stone into the farthest trashcan.

Athletic, competitive, and objective, but if only me and 3 weak-ass kids from the same street play it, its not sport. It's a game.

>>121492
>referees =/= judges
Uhh, greco-roman wrestling has judges, usually more than one, to try to even-out subjectivity.

>>121472
Driving is a sport, it just seems less physical because we all do it and people think it's easy. There's a world of difference between you and people in F1.
