I've been really impressed with the way the Pens have handled the Crosby injury. Malkin has really come into his own.

Any word on when he is set to return?
>> Try Again Bragg
Can the Sharks play up to their skill level at some point? It's really starting to piss me off.
>> Anonymous
>>170
no real time table yet, but he is practicing, but gingerly i hear
>> Anonymous
>>170

No timeline but he is partaking in partial practices.

In his absence Malkin has really turned his game up to another level and is only a point or two behind Ovechkin for the league lead. Once Crosbys back in the lineup this team will be a force. I find it odd that Conklin has been a huge part of their turnaround though. I mean come on ... Ty Conklin? What the shit.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0

>>182

I think he's been doing contract drills and the footage I've seen shows him skating hard. I wouldn't be surprised if he was back late this week.

>>179

Good luck on your road trip. Didn't you start it off with a loss?

I can not stand Crosby. He just annoys me to the point of no return. And whats up with he whole thing about him playing with a broken foot last year. He barely hit the boards hard and hes out for a while. I've wiped out feet first towards the bored much much faster than he did, and i never got injured.

Canadafag here,

I didn't know Americans actually watched Hockey outside of Detroit. I'll allow it as we watch your football.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>196

>I mean come on ... Ty Conklin? What the shit.

The Pens ALWAYS have some random goaltender rise from obscurity. Think of Hedburg & Tugnut. It's like a ritual.

>In his absence Malkin has really turned his game up to another level and is only a point or two behind Ovechkin for the league lead. Once Crosbys back in the lineup this team will be a force.

I think they need to make a move at the trade deadline for another scoring winger. That would allow Sid & Malkin to play on separate lines at their natural positions.

2 in fact. Sunday against the Rangers and today against the Islanders. Apparently Nabakov took one right off the mask hard enough to dent it and cause him to bleed pretty bad. Wilson put him back in at the start of the 3rd and he let the first two shots go in to blow the Sharks 2 goal lead.
>> Anonymous
>>226

You also throw bone crunching hits and are bigger and older than Crosby. Generally more entertaining as well yet Crosby will always steal the spotlight due to the fact that he's the face of the new NHL.

How does that make you feel?
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>226

>I can not stand Crosby. He just annoys me to the point of no return.

Jealousy from a capsfag? I'd hate him too if I were a caps fan. Aren't you used to the Pens ending your seasons in the first round of the playoffs?

>He barely hit the boards hard and hes out for a while. I've wiped out feet first towards the bored much much faster than he did, and i never got injured.

Please don't troll my thread. Anyone who has ever played any sport seriously knows how innocent looking plays can result in serious injuries.
>> Anonymous
>>230

Hey. You. Stop it with the overused nationalistic jokes, you're making me look bad.
>> Anonymous
>>233

Well essentially they would be moronic to break up Malkins line when Crosby comes back. Crosby should be weened back into the lineup as the second center and maybe he'll develop his own chemistry there. Staal really needs to pick his game up too.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>230

Some of us Yanks up north played Hockey. It is rare to meet a hockey fan south of the Mason-Dixon line.
>> Anonymous
>>255

As a Vancouver fan it's all too apparent.

Kevin Bieksa out for the whole season because of a freak accident in the corner where he lacerated his calf. Fucked the team pretty hard.
>> Anonymous
>>279

Yeah. There's some fairly big hockey communities in the US. It's a shame places like Carolina and Nashville have teams though because they barely have fans.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0

How about that Zednik injury?

At first glance, it didn't even look like the skate made any substantial contact. That is until the arterial blood spurted all over the ice.
>> Anonymous
>>244
Look at the teams. Crosby is surrounded by a good array of talent. Ovechkin hardly has anyone around him and he still gets it done. If you put Ovechkin on the Pens, and Crosby on the Caps, I'm pretty sure you would see some sort of relflection in the stats
I dont care what you have to say. Its all opinion. You like Crosby, i dont. I like Ovechkin, you don't.

>>255
And I'm not trolling the sport jackass.I've had my share of injuries, but come on. It looked like nothing even happened! I can't even see his ankle twist or anything. I'm not knocking the injury. He must be in pain yes, but it did not look like a hard enough crash to injure him.

Oh wait...who is leading the league in goals?

For the record, I'm not a caps fan, I'm a flyers fan
>> Anonymous
>>317
yeah but at least the fans they have aren't boo birds like in Canada and other hockey cities; theres a reason why some players don't want to play in Canada, too much pressure; look at Emery, he'd probably straighten out his problems if he didn't have the canadian media breathing down his neck, and theres a reason why players like Ovechkin won't sign to Canadian teams; team loses and everyones staring at you
>> Anonymous
Would I trust Conklin in net in the playoffs? WELL JUST ASK EDMONTON
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>331

>I like Ovechkin, you don't.

What? He's a great scoring winger. He's just not as good as Crosby.

He's about to be passed in the scoring race by the second best player on the Pens.

>I'm a flyers fan

Obnoxious flyer fans. You can't have a hockey discussion without one.
>> Anonymous
>>323
that was brutal to watch

anyone know if its true that the buffalo team doc is the same guy who treated malarchuk after his accident?
>> Anonymous
>>331

I wasn't saying I didn't like Ovechkin. I was just playing along with the post where you were talking as if you were him.

I like both Ovechkin and Crosby. They both have high levels of talents but they're dynamically different players. Ovechkin is a natural goal scorer wheras Crosby is a more finesse/playmaking style player. They both make everyone around them better though and seem to turn nobodies into point getters.
>> Anonymous
>>283
Man, why the fuck are the Canucks sucking so much lately. We better at least make the fucking playoffs.
>> Anonymous
>>357
How am I being obnoxious! You're the one acting all smug.

Why do Flyers fans get a bad rap? Seriously. I'm not even arguing anything about the team.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>366

With the new point happy NHL almost EVERYONE is in the fucking hunt for the playoffs.

It's going to be interesting at the end of the season.
>> Anonymous
>>382
case and point: the southeast division, only something like 9 points seperate the top 4 teams for 1st
>> Anonymous
>>347

Ovechkin signed the long-term contract due to comfortability. He's already been in Washington for a few years and is comfortable there and doesn't want to have to relocate regardless of where it would be. It's why he turned down shorter term contracts. Kinda like DiPietro in Long Island. Doesn't want to move if he doesn't have to.

The only city where you wouldn't want to play thanks to media would be Toronto. Emery in Ottawa brings it all upon himself.
>> Anonymous
>>382
Not really, the point differences between teams seems alot smaller, but with 3 point games floating around (ie 1 point for OTL and 2 for the win), it's alot tougher to catch up.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>348

The Pens are in an interesting position. They have Fleury returning from injury and will be able to ride the hot hand in net.

Now they have to deal that piece of shit sabu.
>> Anonymous
>>390
come on, the guy was 5 minutes late to one, and then got confused about where practice was being held during a road trip and was still only 2 minutes late; and both times the media like tsn pounces the guy saying his time is up in ottawa and he's getting dealt any day now
>> Anonymous
>>366

It's an easy explanation. Luongo is in a funk which may or may not be related to the distraction of his wife being pregnant with his child. I think it does have something to do with it though since his game hasn't been up there since we learned of it.

Their defensive core has been a rotating door since the second month of the season. Bieksa being out the whole season doesn't help since he puts up points and Mitchell, Salo, Ohlund and Kraijek have all had their fair share of missed gametime. Edler has been the only solid D-man since the start of the season and he's a fucking rookie.

That game against Edmonton though was a character building sort of game so I hope that was the beginning of good things.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>402

It's hilarious to watch the Toronto media hound the leafs. It's almost worse than the New York media and the Yanks.
>> Anonymous
>>402
No way he gets dealt, Ottawa needs him... unless they can find another goaltender, which is unlikely. Soon they'll have to choose either him or Gerber, Emery brought them to the finals last year, and Gerber choked in the playoffs, and lost his starting position to Cam Ward (which wasn't so bad since Cam Ward dominated)

also, Emery was more like 62 minutes late, since they're supposed to be there an hour prior.
>> Anonymous
>>402

Even Emerys team-mates don't buy the "I went to the wrong facility" excuse. That and his multiple fights with team-mates in practice?

The guys a hot-head that needs to cool down and straighten himself out a little bit. That fact that he's not even playing that well and the Senators in general aren't doing to great right now amplifies his situation.

I also hear he doesnt keep the best company and may enjoy some blow every now and again
>> Anonymous
>>434

It's getting annoying that it's seeping into other regional media thanks to the trade deadline getting closer and closer.

I bet Sundin doesn't even waive his no-trade.
>> Anonymous
>>448
he and kaberle, who is also being hounded in canadian media as trade bait, have both said they dont want to waive their no trade clauses and dont want to move
>> Anonymous
>>448
Well he's got a year on his contract, would probably end up being a rental player and coming back to toronto
>> Anonymous
also with forsberg out of the picture, his demand has gone way up
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>448

Where the hell do they see him going?

I haven't been paying any attention to the Sundin trade talk.
>> Anonymous
>>468
not 448, but rumours say the teams interested in Mats are anaheim, san jose, calgary, vancouver, detroit, or the rangers... they want him knowing he will probably not re-sign after the year, and people say they want antropov in the bundle as well
>> Anonymous
>>453

Neither of them have said to the media that they won't waive it. The general thought though is that they won't.

>>454

Well, it's not even really a year. After this season he's a UFA. But yeah, he can come back to Toronto if they want to re-sign him.

>>468

Everywhere. Anaheim is the big name being thrown out there though because they hold Edmontons first round draft pick which has a good chance of being a fairly high pick. Burke said he's willing to trade it if the right offer comes along. Sundin for a potential top 5 draft pick? Would sound pretty good to Toronto.
>> Anonymous
>>468
Ive heard that Sundin would consider a move to a "ideal team" like Detroit if they offered something to the trade like a contract extention for him

simple fact is that hes said he doesnt want to move from toronto, and if he would, itd have to be as something more than a rental
>> Anonymous
>>485
>>485
Kaberle and Sundin have both said they won't waive their clauses... at least their agents have (and I think they have too). Then again, players generally say one thing and mean another so it's not exactl confirmation
>> Anonymous
>>505

I can't find any official media that states this and it would be a top story on TSN or The Score if this was the case. I haven't heard anything about it.

I won't be surprised if they don't waive their no-trades however.
>> Winlandfag
Huh. This thread's giving me some serious nostalgy trips. Haven't followed NHL since... hmm... since Hartford Whalers. Maybe I should pick up on it again.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>505

It's usually intended as a bargaining chip. The only way I can see Sundin being dealt is if he is offered a nice fat extension.
>> Anonymous
>>515
Kaberle's agent saying so
http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/mckenzie/?id=229982
>> Anonymous
>>529

Yeah I actually just heard like 2 minutes ago on TSN that Kaberle won't do it. Oops.

There's nothing on Sundin though.
>> Anonymous
>>515
Well on Bob Mckenzie's blog on TSN he quotes Kabs' agent... he said (among other things) "I talked to him this morning and it's still the same thing - he's not moving"

http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/mckenzie/?id=229982

As for Sundin, I can't find the link or anything, but I do know that Sundin does not want to be moved... I live in toronto and hear it all the time, just don't remember from where
>> Anonymous
>>535
woops, ignore the first part of my post
>> Anonymous
http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/299081

one of the many links on Sundin... but like someone said, his refusal to waive could just be a bargaining chip to be traded to a good team for a long term deal... or he could really love toronto. Who knows
>> Anonymous
>>545
could be that Sundin has played there so long, and don't want to uproot; 14 years is a long time to be in one town
>> Anonymous
>>552

That's usually the case but this article is from Jan 31. At this time they thought they still had a chance to make a run at the playoffs. It's not even close anymore.

That meeting also happened but neither side has said more than "We had good dialogue."
>> Anonymous
anyone see that the league is considering making ot penalties only 1 minute instead of the standard 2?

thoughts?
>> Anonymous
>>559
Well on February 1st it was stated that "Sundin and Fletcher agreed not to divulge publicly what was discussed and also made a pact to no longer talk to reporters about whether Sundin will waive his no-trade clause leading up to the Feb. 26 trade deadline. Sundin did reiterate, however, that he wants to remain with the Leafs.". This followed by them saying that trade talks and waiving the clause would be kept private, which probably means SOMETHING is going to happen.

also the one minute OT penalty sounds like a good thing to me. OT penalties are way too costly for a team, especially if they're bad calls, or the shitty delay of game for shooting the puck over the glass penalty.
>> Anonymous
>>560

It would make more sense but there's a lot of rule changes that have been floating around forever that never see the light of day.

I think the Delay of Game penalty for putting the puck over the glass in your own zone is the stupidest shit ever added though. Mostly because the glass height isn't even standard around the league.
>> Anonymous
>>570
Since no-one's had the presence of mind to say this, let me kick it off.

In the tune of the Yellow Submarine.

*cough*

Mats Sundin är en homosexual, homosexual, homosexual~
>> Anonymous
>>560
it raises the question, what do you with normal powerplay time that carries over into overtime? Is it then unfair for someone to go into OT with 1:45 left on a PP and then the other team to take the same penalty in OT and still end up shorthanded for like 40 seconds after that?
>> Anonymous
>>560
shouldnt mess with ot penalties

they should extent ot to 10 min still 4x4

and maybe get rid of the shoot out for gods sake
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>560

Stupid fucking idea. Do the crime; do the time.

That would only encourage muggings of talented players. NOT something you want to see in an overtime.

>>571
>>570

I hate the stupid-fucking no play zones.

The delay of game penalty is necessary. The league should encourage play-making, not panicked dumping out of the zone. I like to see controlled breakouts; not garbage plays.
>> Anonymous
>>592

They won't get rid of the shootout. Even GM's that don't like the shootout from a team standpoint still think it should be in the game for the fans.

That said way too many games are ending in shootouts and it gets annoying when your team isn't very proficient in them. Still entertaining but ultimately you lose that second point.
>> Anonymous
>>610
i dunno what fans youre polling from but in my experiences traveling to different cities and taking in their respective teams for a night (detroit, anaheim, washington, ottawa, etc) I havent found anyone past casual fan (can't name most players on the team) that actually enjoys the shootout regularly
>> Anonymous
>>606

Fine then. make the glass height around the league a standard height then I'll play along. As it is now so many arenas have different glass heights and teams need to readjust for every building they enter.

It's a penalty you don't see very often and whenever you do it's generally 100% accidental and it's annoying to see a team go 2 men down thanks to an accident.
>> Anonymous
>>619

It's a shame casual fans make up most of the viewers then.

I can swing either way honestly but they wanted to eliminate ties in hockey and the shootout is the best way of doing it. Now all they need to get rid of is 3 point games.

It's not really panicked though. Clearing off the glass is something you're taught to do even in minor levels of hockey. It's a valid tactic especially when on the PK.
>> Anonymous
>>640
Just to clarify I didn't mean to say that they should be penalized, I just used the past tense incorrectly (tired)

>>650
I'm not saying that "panicked" is a bad thing, I used the word because>>606did. Obviously it's a god send on the PK, but it is "panicked" in a ... panic button sense, and it's generally never a bad idea when trying to clear the zone.
