"A slam dunk (or simply a dunk) is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air and manually powers the ball downward through the basket with one or both of his hands over the rim."

He THREW that ball DOWN through the basket while his hand was above the plane of the RIM.

Sure, it's not the usual variety, but it fits the definition.

I've never understood the "not a dunk" argument. There's nothing in the definition of dunk that he didn't do.

Can someone explain to me - logically - why it wasn't a dunk?

It's missing the "slam" half of the slam-dunk.

.....Best way to put it.

Remember from M.J did the foul line dunk and actually dunked it?

>1. To shut with force and loud noise: slammed the door.

Okay, yeah, this doesn't apply.

>2. To put, throw, or otherwise forcefully move so as to produce a loud noise: slammed the book on the desk.

Did the ball make a lot of noise when it hit the rim? I wasn't actually watching the contest.

>3. To hit or strike with great force.

I imagine that the ball hit the rim with a good deal of force, considering how hard he appeared to throw it.

There's also the fact that I've only ever seen "NOT A DUNK" and not "NOT A SLAM DUNK", which tells me people have a problem with the word "dunk" and not the word "slam".
