Kobe Bryant would be the most ridiculous MVP candidate. He just had a normal (for him) year. He's been dwelling in mediocrity for a few years now, then he gets Pau Gasol and suddenly the Lakers are contenders. Meanwhile, Garnett is leading by far the best team 1 year from showing up, taking a terrible team to the best. LeBron and Paul are playing with shittier teammates.
>> Anonymous
I nominate him for "Rapist of the Year".

how can you even deny Chris Paul?

He took his team from the depths of mediocrity to the #2 team in the West, better than the defending champions.

kobe is mvp

1. best player (on both sides of the ball)
2. best team in best conference
3. lakers were in the playoffs before gasol arrived
4. lakers (re- kobe) didn't stumble after making major mid-season trade like dallas and phoenix
5. paul has more help. the turnaround has as much to do with the amount of injuries /no/ had last year.
6. end of season la/no game that basically decided the #1 seed, kobe showed paul who was boss.

paul was ridiculous this year, no doubt. but kobe is the mvp.

paul is a fag how hard is to defend his little nigger ass, some of his passes could easily be stolen if fucking dallas didnt fuck up so much & played like they actually do

>1. best player (on both sides of the ball)

Kobe played TERRIBLE on defense this year, and had the most lopsided stats in the world. Yes, he had 40+ points each game, but barely had any assists or rebounds.

>ww2. best team in best conference

best supporting cast and deepest bench in the league right now. They have Radmanavic, Farmar, Vujacic, and Walton/Turiaf (depending on who starts) right off the bench.

>3. lakers were in the playoffs before gasol arrived

Playoffs =/= 1st seed

>4. lakers (re- kobe) didn't stumble after making major mid-season trade like dallas and phoenix

because they also made a major mid-season trade in getting Gasol.

>5. paul has more help. the turnaround has as much to do with the amount of injuries /no/ had last year.

NO does have a great supporting cast, but they have no bench outside of Bonzi Wells who they obtained mid-season.

>6. end of season la/no game that basically decided the #1 seed, kobe showed paul who was boss.

Kobe is a shooting guard. Paul is a point guard. They don't directly guard each other so he didn't show Paul "who's boss".

>Kobe played TERRIBLE on defense this year
still better than paul's d on his best day

>best supporting cast and deepest bench in the league right now
wtf are you smoking? /no/ /det/ /pho/ /dal/ /bos/ /gs/ has a better starting line-up and phoenix/dallas has a better bench

>Playoffs =/= 1st seed
so? with the pre-gasol line-up, kobe still had the lakers in the playoffs in the best conference of all-time.

>trades
you missed my point. dal and pho both stumbled b/c they had to adjust to major roster changes. la never missed a beat when they made their changes b/c kobe could instantly change his game. he can drop 40, or go 30 6 and 6, whatever is needed.

>bonzi
still better than anyone off the laker's bench. and before that they had bobby jackson, one of the league's best 6th men for almost a decade now.

>They don't directly guard each other so he didn't show Paul "who's boss"
kobe spent a good deal of time guarding paul that game. kobe routinely guards the other team's best player because he CAN play defense. chris went 4-13 that night. the game was big, kobe delivered, paul did not.
>> Anonymous
>>73891

Garnett is not even averaging a double-double (paul pierce is just as important), cp3 should win it but kobe will win it, and honestly it's not that outrageous.
>> Anonymous
>>73965

Phoenix has a better bench? did you see their latest game? Barbosa and Hill did NOTHING. There huge run in the beginning of the game didn't end until Nash got benched.

Gasol is what turned the team from a 4-5 seed to a 1st seed. Maybe you should look at their record pre-deadline. It's the same reason why they didn't do so hot with kobe in previous years.

>still better than anyone off the laker's bench. and before that they had bobby jackson, one of the league's best 6th men for almost a decade now.

Are you kidding me? Radmanovic is one of the best 6th men in the league right now, and Jordan Farmar is one of the best non-starting point guards.
>> Anonymous
>>73970

so b/c barbosa and hill had one bad game (against the champion spurs) all of a sudden radmonovic and farmar (going against the nuggets who are allergic to d) are better? bitch, please. rad averaged 8 points this season. 8. barbosa averaged 16. barbosa was 6th man of the year last year for fucks sake.

Anyone lobbying for KG as the leader of that turnaround needs to kiss Kevin McHale's nutsac for lobbing Garnett to you assholes. Ainge's work to get Allen was the deal clincher there, Garnett is not the reason for that franchise's turnaround, coupling two hall of famers with Paul Pierce is the reason.

My MVP is Bryant for the fact that that number one seed clinched it. The only faggots who were surprised by New Orlean's showing this year were fuckwads who didn't realize what they had last year due to injury where they JUST missed the playoffs playing crippled most of the year. It's what also pisses me off about the "z0mg Scott 4 coach of the year surprise Hornets!" No, they weren't a surprise, they were gonna be great with one of the best point guards in the game, one of the best shooters in the game, and a budding David West, they're golden, fuck the voters.

Adelman for COY by the way, Rockets were dead at the half, fire off 22 straight, and make it (To die, but still) in the playoffs. Did a damn good job keeping that team together.

Lakersfag here, even though it looks like Kobe's locked it up already, I wouldn't have minded if KG/CP3 got it.. Still..

>Kobe played TERRIBLE on defense this year, and had the most lopsided stats in the world. Yes, he had 40+ points each game, but barely had any assists or rebounds.

Kobe finished 5th in DPOY voting, he didn't have many 40+ point games, averaged the most assists in an offense that spreads the assists around, and he's an sg so he's not expected to rebound.

>best supporting cast and deepest bench in the league right now. They have Radmanavic, Farmar, Vujacic, and Walton/Turiaf (depending on who starts) right off the bench.

Agreed, to a point. Jordan Farmar stunk it up for the second half of the season, and Walton's played hurt all year. Still, yeah, a great bench.

>Playoffs =/= 1st seed
They were the one seed when Bynum went down, and the seeds were constantly shuffling because the conference was so competitive anyway. I think, considering the circumstances of the conference race, I think pre-gasol that's what matters-- they were competitive.

>Kobe is a shooting guard. Paul is a point guard. They don't directly guard each other so he didn't show Paul "who's boss".

Kobe showed Paul "who's boss" by winning the game. Even if they didn't guard each other, it was a statement game that pretty much decided the MVP vote. Kobe flourished, CP3 didn't.

>NO does have a great supporting cast, but they have no bench outside of Bonzi Wells who they obtained mid-season.

agreed.

>Anyone lobbying for KG as the leader of that turnaround needs to kiss Kevin McHale's nutsac for lobbing Garnett to you assholes.

McHale didn't "lob" Garnett to Boston, The Celtics actually gave quality players up in that move. Lobbing Garnett up would've been accepting what Memphis accepted for Gasol, which would've been something like a package centered around Theo Ratliff, Gabe Pruitt and Brandon Wallace.

sir charles got it right

this ain't the lifetime achievement award, really it should be between CP3 and KG for completely transforming their teams.
>> Anonymous
>>74496

Idiot. KG was solely responsible for transforming the Celtics? And if Pierce/Allen had no say in it, then why did they play well over .500 when KG was injured?

And also, I'm not disagreeing with Barkley's point, but the fact that Barkley says that the MVP is not a lifetime achievement award is ridiculous. You're telling me that lifetime achievement had nothing to do with Charles snagging his lone MVP from MJ? Until Charles publicly admits that he only won that MVP because the voters were sick of giving it to MJ and because Charles played well throughout his career, his opinion in this matter should be crammed up his ass.

tl;dr: Sir Charles is a hypocrite
>> Anonymous
>>74562

Garnett is the reason for the efficiency and effort seen in Allen and Pierce. anyone who's seen the Celtics this season would know that saying Garnett single-handedly transformed the Celtics is not an overstatement.

also, Barkley's actually winning MVP has nothing to do with his opinion on the award being a lifetime achievement award or not. the Suns won 62 games in the regular season, far better than any other team, including the Bulls, and got to the finals. and it's not like Barkley had unimpressive numbers like KG this season. dude went 26 and 12 in his first season with a new team. just because you could argue that voters got sick of voting for MJ doesn't mean an argument can't be made for how legit Barkley's MVP was.
>> Anonymous
MVP =/= lifetime achievement.

Kobe is MVP due to overwhelming awesome, and this year is probably the best he's ever played. I dont give a fuck what you say about stats, Gasol, etc., just watching the guy you can tell this is the best he's ever been.

Paul is soooo close but comes up like an inch short this year, by nosediving slightly in the last few weeks of the season.

Garnett plays in the East. An Eastern MVP would be a fucking joke.
>> Anonymous
kobes gonna be MVP.

You can tell with the new NBA cares commercial where it displayed all the stars from diff teams and kobe was the featured one talking in it. Oh and also most NBA analysts have kobe as their 1 spot for MVP.
>> Anonymous
Living in LA, I was rooting for the Pacers to beat up the Lakers because the 3 peat team was just horrible in the sense that their off court dramas are more talked about than their accomplishments, and it was basically Kobe + Shaq + 5 shooters who average 3 points a game. Shaq was unbearable to watch, he could still move around when he first came to LA, but when the team start winning titles he couldn't do anything except pushing defenders around until he finds himself two feet away from the rim. Kobe was just infuriating to watch because he doesn't care about anything but imitating MJ. I was glad the Pistons manhandled them because the Lakers needed to start over. I'd rather they be a mediocre team than a team that can win only by talent and not by chemistry.

With all that said, I only became a Laker fan when Kobe starts passing the ball in the 06 playoffs. He's still selfish, but he is willing to allow his teammates to grow, which was something critics have cited on. The other thing was when he's on the bench, he cheers for his teammates on a good play, and gives advices on bad ones. No reporter will think of that as exceeding expectation(which is one of the criteria since Nash was able to win B2B MVPs) because that's what you're supposed to do, but Kobe has proven the haters wrong in the respect that he can become a leader.

I don't think Kobe will get MVP, and I agree that he doesn't make his teammates better. What he does do is motivating them to have the desire to win and the willingness to work harder.

a couple things.

1) cp3 had an awesome season. as did lebron. i hesitate to give it to kg because of claims like "he makes paul pierce work harder!" ... are you kidding me? pierce was killing himself on terrible teams for the past two seasons, only now the celts' high draft picks are starting to play much better. add in a HOF and a borderline-HOF (or at least perennial all-star) to a team with a lot of youth, and you get a major improvement. if we can credit KG for the improvements his young teammates have made, why does nobody credit kobe bryant for the massive strides taken by farmar, vujacic, and the moderate revitalization of radmanovitch?

2) bryant has played with a torn ligament on a finger on his shooting hand for nearly half the season. during that time, he has actually elevated his game. part of it can certainly be attributed to adding gasol, but that ignores the fact that andrew bynum went down. 28/6/5 isn't exactly chopped liver.

3) bryant is AMAZINGLY overrated defensively. he should be nowhere near 1st-team defense. that having been said, he at least makes an effort on both ends, is still an above average defender (he's overrated only because people still think he's among the best in the league), and generally is asked to guard the best player on opposing teams in crunch-time situations.

4) to be honest, i believe lebron should get the award. but though the mvp race doesn't play by the same rules every season, one generally holds true: your team has to be very good. the cavs were mediocre this year. if lebron deserves it this season, bryant deserves to have won it AT LEAST in 2006, when he averaged 35/5/4, played 41 mpg missing only 2 games all year, and dragged a collection of stiffs far worse than the supporting cast of the cavs to a playoff berth in the west.

tl;dr: lebron's team sucks, kg gets credit for things he doesn't deserve, and cp3 is totally legit (the only player who -should- win if bryant doesn't)

i actually agree with every single thing in this post EXCEPT what was brought up about KG. i have seen KG pull a teammate to the side to talk (not scream, not yell, not complain) things over, whether it's on the court or in the huddle, far too many times, including when he was back in Minnesota. you can tell me that i've had way too much of the kool-aid, and that's ok, but i completely believe that he has had so much more immeasurable influence over his teammates compared to the other candidates, it at least makes up for most, if not all of the gap between the measurable stats.

pretty obvious at this point that i'm a celticsfag, but just let me say this, if you think paul pierce was killing himself for a 24 win team last season, then you were watching something different from what i was watching. there's a reason all those voters factor in team success in their decisions. you can't be all that valuable if your team's not that good.

but in the end, i'd say

1 Kobe
2 KG
3 CP
4 McGrady
5 Lebron

it's not a question of whether or not he's -good-, but whether or not he's playing better now than he has in the past. despite playing fewer minutes than at almost any point in his career (due to being one of several bench shooting specialists), he's having one of his best seasons.

before this year, radman had never shot about 42.5% from the field. this season he's at 45%. his -career- average before this year was somewhere in the 41% range or so, so the difference is significant. his 3pt % is also the best its been in his career since his brief stint as a rook. the point is, he's playing the best basketball of his career (after taking a downturn during the 05 and 06 seasons) - if we're crediting KG for the improvement in his teammates, we should be doing the same for bryant.the player's 'absolute' merit is not being judged.

>>75015
you say paul pierce wasn't killing himself last season? i say:

pierce's line from '05 (the last time the celts were relevant): 36 minutes per game, 45.5% fg, 37% on 3s, 6.5 rebs, 4 assists, 21.6 ppg.

pierce's line from '07 (24 wins): 37 mpg, 44% fg (on a FAR worse team, where he was shooting 3 times more every game), 39% on 3s, 6 rebs, 4 assts, 25 points. yes, he missed a bunch of time - because he was struggling with injury almost all year.

hell, i'm a lakersfag, and i believe paul pierce is the motherfucking truth. even though it seems to be mandated now that we must hate BIGHEWHOSHALLNOTBENAMED, that quote is goddamned accurate. pierce has given pretty much everything he has for you guys for 10 straight years, and you should be damned happy you finally have a team around him that has a legit shot at a title (no, '02 doesn't count, no way anybody in the east was beating the lakers or kings that season, sorry).

yawn noobs.

Kobe for MVP. Kenny said it best: first half of the season, KG vs. Kobe. 2nd Half was Kobe and CP3. Kobe has shown up throughout the whole season as a viable contender for MVP. He deserves it.

If you want to talk about the last game, the Kobe should win for sure. He outscored/hustled/defended CP3 in a blowout game to send the lakers into first seed. If that isn't enough to please you, GTFO and do some research.

The NBA needs Kobe to win MVP and the Lakers to win the Finals. Why? Did you see the ratings for last years finals? How about Donaghy? How about the major flaws in calls by refs *flops*? Trust me, LA has the biggest stage in the world. If anyone can revive the NBA, it's an LA vs Boston rivalry.

Kobe for MVP. No one else comes close, not even CP3 (floor leader) or LeBron (stat machine).

The Mavs of past years MIGHT be able to win without Dirk, but with a lesser bench now and Josh Howard pulling invisible acts in crunch time they needed Dirk to shoulder the load.

As far as Kobe overrated defensively, it's partially true, but if you look at all the other elite perimeter defenders, they don't have to do anything except spotting up for 3s, no one can do what Bryant does on the offensive end and STILL play defense against the best player on the other team. I am not saying Kobe can stop the likes of Melo or AI on virtually all possessions, but he makes them harder to get an open look, which is impressive because of how much energy he already need to spend when he's on the attack.

No one on Boston is getting MVP this year. Why? Because The "Big Three" were all on losing teams last year, and did nothing to carry their teams.

Lebron isn't getting MVP because, even though he has the numbers, his team is losing. Put Kobe on a half-ass team and he'll get Lebron's numbers easily.
