The majority of athletes typically come out of low-income communities that view athletics and professional sports as a viable career opportunity, in comparison with other options.
These players tend to dominate the popular sports, pushing out higher-income amateurs into fringe sports like lacrosse, because they tend to have other, better career opportunities in comparison to pro sports.
Kids from disadvantaged families, like many black families in the US, don't go into soccer, baseball or hockey because these are not perceived to be popular sports at both the high school, college, and pro levels.
Basketball and football, however, are popular at all these levels in the US, so naturally talented athletes viewing sports as their best shot select these sports.
