Our national team would be so much better if soccer was popular.

Just think about all the urban kids that would play. Kevin Garnett as keeper, fucking Reggie Bush as forward.

Somewhat on topic, just secured my season tickets for LA galaxy. Good choice? Probably not. We'll see

That's what's weird, Beckham himself said in an interview that it IS popular in the U.S... among kids age 5-10. Then suddenly they get older and there's no more league for them to play in.

It exists as a college sport, but maybe Americans are just too spoiled by having the best in the world at every sport, except soccer? Theories abound.

No, Soccer is still struggling in the U.S. Beckham definitely helped though. Maybe in time most Americans will remove their heads from their bums and actually give Soccer a chance instead of dismissing it as a "faggot" sport, then maybe it will become something huge.

Also I have heard Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho have expressed their interest in the MLS. If they came to the states, the sport will take off in popularity. No question.

That is true, but it was really the closest thing we have to an example in American sports. The only other parallel would be if college sports changed conferences every season based on performance.

Since we'd probably need way more than the 30-ish teams currently in NBA/MLB/NFL to do it in THOSE sports, I propose MLS joins UEFA. Our top three teams get to play in your league next year. Travel costs would be shit, but I'd actually GO to see the Houston Dynamo get their asses kicked by Arsenal next year. Or whoever.

I agree, relegation matches would help MLS- I think there's a second B league out there somewhere in the US- they should unite forces.

I think the big problem with soccer in the US is that American players are third-rate athletes- our best and second best all play other sports like hoops or football or even baseball. (Or Hockey, Track and Field.. shit, almosy anything but soccer.)

Chicago Fire fan here. Season ticket holder and member of Section 8, the supporter section.

The MLS as a league does suck, yes... but it IS only a little over a decade old. Everyone here plays soccer in middle school and some still play in high school. After that, there are relatively few athletes that haven't started playing a "real" sport, or at least what Americans define as a real sport (I vehemently disagree). No one has ever considered soccer to be a real sport because up until a few years ago, there was no real league. So now it's an uphill battle for the people here that like soccer and want to be able to compete with European leagues some day. As long as there is no demand for soccer, there will be no real money for the players, and as long as there isn't potential for multi-million dollar contracts, all the kids in the ghetto are going to keep playing basketball and dreaming of being NBA stars, not MLS stars.

But the league has been getting better and they've been doing some smart things these past few years. Just last season they gave a "designated player" slot to each team which is basically one player each team can have that would allow them to pay over the salary cap. This is why we could get Beckham, Blanco and Angel over here. Now that we have some big names, people are actually starting to pay attention here. Since Blanco came to Chicago, there has been a LOT more Mexican fans coming out to see games on a regular basis. With the Mexican population in Chicago, LA, San Jose and Dallas, there's a crowd that already loves soccer, they just need to be convinced that an MLS game is worth going to. Someone (at least in Chicago) finally realized that and things are getting better.

continued from >8732
As for the quality of the teams in the league, yeah, it's not so great. But we haven't faired too poorly when we play against European teams in friendlies. Just this last year the MLS all-star team beat Chelsea. And, yeah, it was an all-star team, not a real club, but the same argument could be made about Chelsea. I think DC United could manage to be a middle-of-the-table team in the English Prem. Possibly even the New England Revolution. The Fire have been hit or miss the past couple seasons, and I am biased, but i think they could contend just fine with a Middlesbrough or a Blackburn.

But really, I love the Fire (and by virtue of the Fire, I also love the MLS) because it's a great outlet for my love and desire to watch soccer. Not only are the crowds getting bigger, but the supporters are starting to become real supporters. I've been at nearly every home game and a decent amount of away games of the Fire for the past four years and the supporter section is growing leaps and bounds. People want a European atmosphere and we're taking into our own hands. We have smoke bombs and flares and drums and chants and tifo displays of all kinds. Not every MLS team has the supporters, sadly. I'm lucky to live in a city with some of the best soccer supporters in the country but not everyone is so lucky. DC has great fans and Toronto FC has shown promising crowds (although we'll see if they continue coming after Toronto finished dead last in the league last season).

I think eventually we'll get a one table system, complete with relegation, but as of right now, that's just not an option. But for me it's a little slice of real football here in the states and so I will always be an avid Fire supporter.

The Fire just signed Cuauhtemoc Blanco last year and I'm not surprised that you didn't know because not a lot of people in the US know who he is. But he was a really big star in the Mexican league playing for Club America. He's not young anymore but he's still playing well and was a big boost for the team. It's not really something they talk about on the evening news though... not the English-speaking evening news at least.

This is my post, I mentioned the New York Metros. My bad... I actually meant the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (1968-1984).

The Cosmos were HUGELY popular in the 1970's. They were rock stars. They got into Studio 54. They only reason I know about them is because a documentary on them came out not too long ago, "One in a Lifetime" (2006).

The problems were (a) they were the ONLY team that was famous, much like I was worried would happen to the LA Galaxy. This thread has disproved that theory. (b) the league was corrupt as fuck, and folded in the mid-1980's because no one could agree on how to run it. (c) some colleges still use NASL rules to this day.

ON THE OTHER HAND-- poor kids on the backstreets of European, African, Asian, South American and island countries play soccer. If you're poor, all you need is a ball and some area to define as the goal. And there's a FUCKLOAD of poor people on this planet. ... In the U.S., poor people play basketball. Because even America's poor can manage a metal hoop, I guess.

So there's good and bad points. The good news is the MLS has learned the lesson of its predecessors (we hope). The bad news is, we need to be giving more soccer balls to poor kids.
>> Anonymous
>>8994
You're probably right, but the general consensus of America is "we're already the best, so let's compete amongst ourselves."

Warning to the world though: Our soccer hooligans will probably have guns, and an addiction to watered down, shite beer.

I hang out with a bunch of Eurofags who talk about it a lot and it's somewhat sparked my interest. If soccer from MLS or overseas was televised (or if I even knew when it was televised), I'd watch it. Football season is over and I need something to watch anyways besides faggy baseball.

I'm looking at the site now, I'm guessing the season start up in late March?

Well, yeah, your choices are pretty much baseball, Arena Football, or MLS.

And you CAN get UEFA games here (my sister used to work in an English pub), but they're all on at like 3 a.m.
>> Anonymous
I honestly gave MLS a shot, but it's too damn boring. A bunch of guys kicking a ball up and down a field for an hour and a half and if you're lucky it goes into the net once or twice in that time period. It makes the whole event seem like a waste of time and a grinding endurance match.

Despite that it still manages to be more engaging than baseball, though.

I guess it loses much of the appeal when you don't have any affinity with either of the clubs.

They're not great about playing MLS games on TV but they've been getting better. Last season ESPN2 had a game on every Thursday. Fox Soccer Channel has a good amount of MLS and a whole lot of English and Italian league games but it's a special order channel. Setanta is supposed to be really good but Comcast doesn't offer it yet so i don't know, and again, it's special order. GolTV is just... horrible... and special order. Comcast offers a sports package thingie that gives you a few of the less popular sports channels for a few extra bucks per month. I don't remember how much exactly but it gives me FSC and that's all I need. Don't know what other cable/sat companies offer.

If you go to the MLS site and pick a team at the top, go to their site and look at their game schedule, it will list what channel the game will be on.

The great thing about following MLS and a Europe is there is no off season since the MLS plays from spring to fall and the European clubs play from fall to spring. Soccer all year round fuckyesyouarethebestsportever.

The USL-1 is basically the the 'second division' of the USA/Canada soccer pyramid, but there's no promotion/relegation in the 'normal' league sense. This is mostly because the leagues aren't very stable and fold semi-routinely even without danger of relegation.

That said, the Seattle Sounders are getting promoted to MLS not through standings (although they are the current season and playoff champions) but because their owner got Drew Carey and some other Hollywood guys to add the financial backing to bump the franchise up a rung.

Soccer/Association Football will never take hold in the U.S. unless the national team actually starts competing for titles regularly, which means likely
never. While football has entrenched itself as the top sport, other sports are still struggling. Hardly anyone watches most regular season NBA games. Although MLB is doing good now, it wasnt long ago it was having troubles selling tickets, prior to the steroid fueled homerun frenzies of Big Mack and Sosa. NHL is a dieing league in the US. Unfortunately there are enough hicks to fuel NASCAR still, however.

Plenty of people watch regular season NBA games. It's the most lucrative sport in the U.S. Charge a grand for front-row seats and add that to 41 home games, add THAT to the supposed "family friendly" atmosphere (unlike you soccer hooligans)... it does pretty well for itself.

Meanwhile, our soccer players can't compete... yet. That's why the MLS exists, so we can hone our skills and one day not even have to send a national team... just fly the Houston Dynamo across the pond to kick your ass.

The top three sports in America are (obviously) NFL, NBA, MLB (in that order). Because of staggering greed and stupidity on the part of the owners, the NHL has shot itself in the foot and is now mostly ignored by Americans at large. It still has its niche audience, as does NASCAR (which is, and will always be, boring as fuck).

So MLS could take off, IF people form attachments to their teams. There ARE rabid, drooling, crazy sports fans in this country, but they're all too busy rooting for the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Celtics, Steelers, Browns, Giants, Patriots, and the Philly Eagles. And that's the entire list.

I'm American and 9 out of 10 soccer fags here will readily admit the MLS is fucking garbage. LOL at the retard trying to talk shit about the Premiership. It IS the best, and in case you haven't noticed MLS has foreignors too. The fact they let the wetbacks have their own Chivas goats USA horseshit, MLS = epic fail.

It may be full of foreigners, however it isn't your most popular sport. Don't you find it terrible that Arsenal, one of the top teams in the EPL, find it hard to even field one English player?

>>9793

I find nothing quality about greedy players on 100k a week, face it the EPL is based around money. This was proven with the whole 39 games fiasco

Seriously do you think any bussiness in the world is out not to make money? I agree that a salary cap needs to be brought in across the board and a minimum indiginous player limit needs to be brought in but your still a prize prick. gb2/b/ trollfag.

But Theo Walcott would get in pretty much any team outside the Premiership/La Liga/Serie A.

Man Utd's basic success and foundation was it's youth system. Quit crying. If anything the big 4 are just trying to stay competitive, esp in the Champions League. Arsenal and Chelsea aren't exactly Man U and Liverpool historically, they have to buy their success more and they do no more of it than Real Madrid or Barca. MLS blows, fuck off and get a new argument. I support the US National team, but MLS is an embarrasment, why do you think our best players go abroad?

Wait, what? Arsenal are only a few D1/PL titles behind ManU. They haven't been out of the top division since 1925 or something, longer than any other team. Second team to win three consecutive titles, second team to do the Double, and in neither of those cases was Liverpool or ManU the first team. How is that not on par with Pool or ManU historically?

Also, I think you'll find that both Liverpool and ManU have outspent Arsenal pretty spectacularly in recent years.

i'm sorry i dont seem to see the forced meme.

i have nothing against Hereford Unt. it was more of a dig at the ignorant troll. Come on the 4th team for any club at that level is gonna be pretty low, thats the way it is.

clint mathis, landon donovon both plyed the trade their in the past and were poor at best.
tim howard (everton), Steven cherundolo (Hannover), Oguchi Onyewu (standard), Damarcus Beasley (Rangers), Cory Gibbs (charlton), Heath Peace (FC Nordsjaelland) and Michael Bradley (Heerenveen) all currently play outside of the usa

I like the MLS. What really annoys me is when some of my countrymen (I'm English) refer to that standard of MLS as "pub football". Thats bullshit. I honestly believe most MLS teams could at least handle themselves in the Coca-cola championship, and the top teams are better than the likes of Wigan and Derby.

>>10869

The USA generally has quite honest players, who may sometimes lack skill, but make up for it with a strong work ethic. You want diving? Look at African players. The likes of walking shit-men like Eboue and Adebayor are some of the most dishonest, cheating bastards I have ever seen.

I'm from the US, so I'm going to call it soccer.

The reason Soccer isn't popular here is, well.. Hockey.

Hockey is the same game with sticks and with a faster pace, sure I've watched some soccer, but it's slow hockey to me.

The reason hockey isn't bigger than soccer: You have to live in a cold climate or have lots of money to play it.

Soccer you can buy a ball and find some trash cans.

Seconded, it's a Canadian game, even though I enjoy it, but basketball and football games give you better value. And to that faggot who keeps trolling making fun of ''Amerikan Rugby'' just shut the hell up. I mean it's nice you have the World Cup, but you fuck with the Super Bowl, you fuck with America. Also, I bet you're some whiny bitch who lives in Wichita, Kansas and hates football players because of this story which I'm sure has a lot more in relation to you than you think. Chump Change kept looking at Nikki. She was a cheerleader and the star linebacker's girlfriend, his name was Jack. Jack didn't like Chump Change being such a relentless pedo with no life. Later, Chump Change saw the quarterback Luke. He wanted his barnhole sauced in by him. So he said, ''Luke, wanna suck my massive 3 inch dick?!!!1111!!!!!1LOL''. Luke just kind of walked away. Later that night, Luke, Jack and other members of the football team beat Chump Change. Chump Change went to 4chan and told them his story about what a dumb fuck he is. The End.
