Sup, /sp/.
I wish to learn fencing. The problem is, I don't want to spend too much money. How expensive is fencing?
Also, I don't know, which weapon to choose - rapier, sword or sable.
Pic somehow related.

Worse than that - in Soviet Russia.

It depends what you prefer. I fenced for nine years with foil and epee. For tactics and strategy, I preferred foil since it's lighter and you can only hit the torso which makes it tougher. Perfect for people who are lighter on their feet for fast strikes. Epee is heavier and you can target the whole body, so it's better suited if you're a bit taller and stronger.

I never liked sabre although many swear by it and it is the funnest weapon to just slash the living crap out of people. I did it twice and bled both times (no not that, you sick sick people!)

>Well I looked up a local club and found this:

Beginners will learn the basic elementary technique of foil, and the beginners’ program is a two semester process.

Intermediate and advanced classes and lessons are provided in foil, epee and sabre. Classes take place on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm. Free fencing and individual lessons are conducted from 8:30-10:00 pm. The Club also offers practices on alternate Tuesday evenings for non-beginners to take lessons and practice bouting.

Fees: Beginners $50.00 per Month

Advanced: $40.00 per Month

Beginners are required to purchase a starters’ kit at a cost of approximately $200.00. The kit includes a jacket, weapon, underarm protector, mask, glove, equipment bag and other equipment required for the safety of participants. Non-beginners are required to provide their own equipment.

It depends how much you wanna spend. A lot of clubs have beginner's equipment to see if you like it. If you wanna keep going and compete, then you'll probably need two swords for the weapon you choose, the full kit, You don't need to buy the electric scoring attachment as most clubs have them. Two swords and full kit: count about 1500 dollars. But that's new. Second-hand, you can count 6-700.
