Cheerleading, sport or no? Anonymous
Roommate and I are having a heated debate. Do you consider cheerleading a sport? I say it is (and I never was a cheerfag) because it calls for physical exertion, athletic ability, practice (no one is born able to do stunts), competition and money is involved. Squads compete against each other and are scored based on their performance.

Just because it doesn't include a ball, protective pads (I think its more athletic because of the lack of safety gear), "manly men", and face-to-face competition with opponents doesn't mean it's not a sport.

What do you think?

more sport than racing
>> President Dog !rxaU.6oOlI
No, cheerleading is meant to be a breast-based distraction from sports. it may be physical, but it is in no way a sport.
>> Anonymous
>physical exertion, athletic ability, practice (no one is born able to do stunts), competition and money is involved

Don't try to define 'sport'. Sports are like porn: You know it when you see it.

And for the record, cheerleading is not a sport any more than sucking dicks is a sport, since cockgobbling meets your criterea.

how did the all-male squads from before the '40s pull that off?

Judging on artistic merit makes it not a sport.

I'm saying if you have to dig back that far to disprove what I'm saying you shouldn't be making that point. Nobody cares that there were all-male cheer team back in the so-called good old days. Cheerleaders today = chicks with racks jumping around. NOT. A. SPORT.

I used to be in a competitive show choir (about as close as I can come to cheerleading). While it can be physically taxing, require a lot of the same elements as traditional sports, and requires much of the same training/practice I do not consider it a sport.

I always refer to these sorts of things as competitions. For it to be a sport you need to be able to physically prevent your opponent from doing things. Cheerleading is a non-contact (with opponents) routine with only a 3rd party to judge the results, hopefully non-biased and fairly.

Now, if I could leg sweep Jamie there and cause her flying friend Helga to crash pelvis-first into the earth, we may just find some common ground.

I thought it was something you added to your sport, say, if it wasn't manly enough.

>>461656

A good portion of them.... yes. Don't get me wrong, I'm still very impressed by the athletic talent of marathon runners, gymnasts, and the lot of them, but I don't consider them as sports, just competitions.
>> Anonymous
>>461656
if you're talking about race sports like running and rowing, you're wrong because you can very well exert your will over the competition in a race. that's the reason world records are rarely set at the olympics: people are surrounded by the best in the world, and so they have to focus more on winning strategy than on clocking a great time.
now stuff like shooting, i agree with you because each performance is basically in a vacuum and you don't exactly change your "strategy" based on your competition. the strategy is always "shoot at the middle"
>> Anonymous
Running is borderline sport, atg least. There's a clearly defined end (none of this judging bullshit) so you know who won when the shit's over easily instead of waiting for dumbass McClownpants to give your athlete the score your team paid for, It's all about physical prowess, and you stop the other runners not directly physically, but by going faster than them and destroying their hopes, though if it ends up with two iron-willed runners it can be a close race. You use your physical running to mentally destroy the others into submission. Cheerleading and gymnastics have that too, but it's less of a doing your bnest to destroy the others than it is just remembering dancing lessons.
>> Anonymous
>>461711
this reminds me of another thing: shit like cheerleading can never develop any kind of lore about the olden days or anything like that because there aren't any records to be broken, no meaningful statistics to point back to. nobody will ever score higher than a ten, because the number means nothing in reality. there is no limit defining the edge of human performance. no record will stand forever. be it marathon time, career rushing yards, or whatever. the beauty of sports is that a kid watching could one day grow up and push the ennvelope and be the best, not join faggy list of perfect-10 achievers or something. someone has to be the best.
>> Anonymous
>>461747
best point yet. If the statistical factor has a cap, it's probably not a sport.
>> Anonymous
>>461747
No end to record? I'm pretty sure there will never in any lifetime be a guy who can run a marathon in -0.26 seconds
>> Anonymous
>>461771
no, but there'll never be a record set that can't be broken
>> Anonymous
>>461772
Yes... there will. Nobody will ever throw for 1000 touchdowns or score 1000 goals in a single season. I was just using an absurdity of physics to make the point. One day a cap will be set and it will never be broken.
>> Anonymous
Athletics != Sports
>> Anonymous
>>461776
really? So there's some invisible wall that exists that will allow someone to throw 999, but not 1000? What is the nature of these physics you speak of? Are they quantum? Wave like or particle? How do they know to allow the 999th TD but not the 1000th?
>> Anonymous
>>461783
you are correct. Sports encompasses a larger field of activities than just athletics
>> Anonymous
>>461784
None, and I know what you are trying to do, debunk one minor statement of my argument to make yours seem justified. I just threw out a number, but lets do this...

What say that the league was retarded and made the football season last 24 hours a day, seven days a week for a calendar year. And lets say we found an athlete that never gets tired, a literal God of Sport, name him Rax Grissman for instance.

Now, even if the defense for Mr. Grissman's team were so fuckawesome that they got the ball back to him an average of every one minute. Even if he throws a touchdown on his first pass every drive that is still a cap of 525,600 Touchdowns. We could probably get even more hypothetical, the point is there will at some point be a number so high that it cannot physically be broken, even if we have to go down to arguing wind resistance.
>> Anonymous
How about I throw my shit up in the air and call it a sport.
>> Anonymous
>>461795
what if a team comes along that has a defense that can get the ball back in say, 59 seconds?

see, throw out a number, I'll find one smaller. "NOT PHISICALLY POSSIBLE!" you BAW? That's what they said about the 4 minute mile.
>> Anonymous
>>461800
That is because the 4 minute mile is physically possible. And that is what you are arguing.

I am arguing that a mile of -2.655 minutes isn't physically possible. As you so gloriously ignored I already stated that, yes we could do this endless waltz for a long time, but I would eventually win. Eventually you will get to a number that is not physically possible.
>> Anonymous
>>461814
yes, keep throwing out negative numbers, that make you look like you know what you're talking about.

0/10, thanks for trying. Or should I say -9/10?
>> Anonymous
>>461800
(that's also what they're saying about the two-hour marathon)
>> Anonymous
>>461814
if they work out the kinks in time travel, who's to say that sort of time wouldn't be possible?
>> Anonymous
>>461816
lol, alright then. I'd rather you think you have a point then dancing all night. If the Defense could get him the ball back every second it would be 3.153x10^7, which isn't physically possible because the accumulated time due to friction, wind resistance, time to drop back and make a pass alone cannot be done twice faster then one second. Unless of course you do want to drop into negative quantities.
>> Anonymous
>>461824
Because how would you determine the winner? If one person is able to do it everyone should have the access. If one person goes back that far another person could just go back further. It would kind of devalue the meaning of sport.
>> Anonymous
>>461826
no negatives, fractions and decimals will suffice, though I'm beginning to get the feeling you haven't learned what those are in school yet.

You seem dead set on placing a limit to values that don't physically or realistically require them. What if a regulation football becomes even more streamlined in the future? They decide to start playing in a vacuum? For someone so apparently young, I'd expect you to be a little more imaginative, at least beyond continual dancing metaphors.
>> Anonymous
>>461826
incidentally, you do have to have the sport reach the limitations stated before the heat death of the universe. Otherwise, for all intents and purposes, I'm right. Which I am anyway.
>> Anonymous
>>461817
First person who made not physically possible argument earlier. I say two hour marathon is possible because it isn't breaking physical barriers of time-space, just what is known about human condition.

The douche you quoted however simply can't grasp the simple concept that even if it is astronomical, there is still a cap.
>> Anonymous
>>461837
a cap so distant as to be indistinguishable with no cap at all... hmm.

sort of a tree falling in a forest kind of arguement
>> Anonymous
>>461832
Playing in a vacuum... so no friction at all then eh? That would make a forward pass awfully hard to make. Much less running somewhere to catch it.
>> Uoykcuf !eiUTZoWFMY
is fucking a sport?
>> Anonymous
>>461842
Yes. Air is the only thing that allows us to move or walk.

Dear god, -1.4*10^134/10
>> Anonymous
>>461841
But, it isn't really so distant. When in the universe would a season be as long to allow for said astronomical cap? And think of the human accomplishing it, what is the purpose of the sport then? It would be unwatchably boring, all outcomes would already be known. Unless of course all athletes on both sides are uber, in which case the God athlete would not get his recording that the opponents would be able to play defense against him, being God athletes themselves.

I support any college sport that has the women wear tiny miniskirts. When they wear the tracksuits, however, they defeat the purpose of cheerleading, which is to distract and seduce the opponent.
