Relegation! Heynonnynonnymous
Sup /sp/. Here's a philosophical question for ya.

Over in Europe, they have this real competitive sport they call "football". It's what we Yanks call "soccer" over here so we don't confuse it with our version of "football" for obvious ethnocentric reasons. Anyways, these football leagues have a major league and several minor leagues. If you screw up royally in the big league, you go through a nifty little process called "relegation", where your team is put down to a lesser league and can't come back to the bigger league until it shows that it can play with the big boys.

Now this I find both a nifty and scary idea. In all of our American sports leagues, your team can stink up the joint for years and the only thing you'd have to put up with is shame and ridicule. At least they can get top draft picks the next year and go through a "rebuilding" process. But a relegated team usually has to sell off name talent once it goes down a level and lick its wounds, only hoping that they can show themselves to have some teeth in the end.

It's unlikely that we will have a relegation system put in place for American sports leagues, though I do admit there'd be a morbid interest to see teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates or the New York Knicks spend a few years in AAA or development leagues until they get better.

Your thoughts?

How many times do we have to have this thread?

repeat thread is repeat thread

If you're a real athlete, the shame and ridicule is worse than "relegation".

false, the relegation also includes the shame and ridicule

If you're a real athlete, you play more than 16 games a year.

I think we need this thread ten or eleven more times to really get to the heart of the question

tonight, I'll start a new thread about relegation in America's sports. Maybe two more threads.

it would be great if at the beginning of each season of a pro sports league, the communities housing the teams getting promoted got to reap the rewards of getting national airtime and influx of fans from the teams they get to play. smaller cities economies would thrive, we'd get to see how quickly the money comes in and the cities build bigger arenas

Relegation is awesome. No way shitty teams should fuck up the same league as good ones, it brings down the quality of the game.
