Juan Pierre will open the second season of a five-year, $44-million contract on the bench.

The Dodgers announced today that Andre Ethier would start Monday's season opener against the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium as their left fielder.

Ethier appears to offer an upgrade over Pierre, who hit .293 last season with 64 stolen bases, in terms of power and has a noticeably stronger throwing arm. Ethier entered today's spring-training finale against Boston hitting .365 with a team-leading six homers and 16 runs batted in.

Pierre was hitting .169 with four RBIs and a dreadful .225 on-base percentage this spring.

I would say they're going to trade him, but I don't think anyone will give players of any real value in return.

Why the fuck would they sign Pierre to a contract that large when they had a guy like Ethier ready to contribute?
