Question /sp/

I only recently (the last two years or so) became a big fan of college football, after coming to a big football school.

The question I've had a lot recently, and I'm trying to keep this relatively devoid of flaming trollery, but why is USC always put up there as a fantastic team (everyone always says they are top 2) even when they haven't seemed to do anything super impressive, the loss in 2006 to UCLA or whoever it was, this years loss to Oregon was it? Is there some kind of history that I'm missing?

Trying to get a somewhat serious answer or two at least before the flaming starts.

Cause they have a program thats smiliar to the pros. Still they choke like 18-1.

How are they similar to the pro?

Skill wise? Training wise?

trollbait.

Longest string of Pac 10 Championships.
and BCS bowl appearances,
including the most impressive BCS performances.

Three Heismans.

A couple teams that can be debated amongst the best of all time.

Winningest active head coach in CFB. Numerous #1 recruiting classes.

It's called a dynasty, surprise losses here and there don't ruin that. Undefeated seasons are rare.

One play away from a threepeat, and if you want to be a bitch, then it was one play away from the first ever back-to-back BCS champions.

USC has been the premier team in CFB this decade, with OSU and LSU running second and third, and Florida building a great program, but not with the same excellence Pete did out of the gate.

Saban at Bama is the closest chance to coming close, he's a teriffic coach.

Because USC is chock full of talent. Lots of it. That's why they're treated as a great team.

They're also chock full of arrogance, so they have players who show up to the NFL and expect to be great without working (not all of them). And as a team, they show up to play lesser opponents and expect to win, which ends up in upsets. That's why they lose to Oregon state.

Rest assured, though, their roster is ridiculously stacked, and their odds in a tournament setting -- where they'd be playing good teams they don't think will roll over and let them walk by -- would be higher than the current setting.

One of the best arguments there is against playoffs.

Oh ok, so it's more that they are just pretty damn good for a while?

I've only heard about them the past 3 years of being in college, 2006-current, which I guess they've been ok, but nothing spectacular, so I didn't realize they had this history.

Thanks.

The Trojans have been at their best as of late, what with the National Championship, the Heisman winners, the PAC-10 Championships, the impeccable win-loss record, the top tier recruiting classes, and NFL player rate, so the media loves them to death.

They're also very arrogant (mostly deservedly) about it all and it attracts people, fans and recruits alike. Basically, people like winning programs, and USC is up at the top, so more and more strong players come there and they remain strong and so attract yet more strong recruits.

They've had a good history, but the best of it has been in the last decade, and typically that's all that anyone really cares about.

Oh, plus they have crazy hot cheerleaders.

Because they are a good team, but unfortunately for them their conference is one of the worst this year. That stops them from being taken as seriously as teams with similar records from tougher conferences such as the SEC or Big XII.

I'd say this is part of it, but in the last couple of years I really think the PAC-10 is linked to the WAC, in the sense that someone can't say, "Oh, Boise State can't be THAT good, yeah they're 11-1, but their conference sucks" ... well, the same can be said about USC, pal. Either BSU and USC are both awesome, or they both suck.

Remember too, tho, that college foosball is big on history. USC was good 20, 30 years ago (before O.J. Simpson killed anyone), so they get the props now, too. Also, a loooooooot of people donate money to that school (the University of Spoiled Children).

Then again, I suppose the conference could just as easily resemble this years NFC North. Or the Sun Belt.

Indeed. And that's about all they have going for them.

Because LA, the second biggest media market, doesn't have a pro football franchise.
All the big media outlets' sports departments suck USC's balls in hopes of getting the viewership of dejected southern California football fans.
If USC was in a place, like Tuscaloosa, Athens, or College Station, no one would give two shits.

West Coast media hype.

Same reason East Coast sports reporting revolves around anything out of New York or Boston.

Stop referring to that "school" (and I use the term lightly) as USC. The real USC was founded in 1801, 50 years before California was even a state, 80 years before Southern Cal was founded.
Just fucking stop. Please.
