Vick was plagued by the constant coaching changes and scheme changes along with no real receivers. I'm not making excuses for the guy and overall I think he could have done better but he wasn't exactly put into a good situation.

It's a problem with running quarterbacks. They are never given the same play scheme as they were in college. They are never given designed plays to make use of their legs. They're expected to play smarter than a pocket quarterback, and run whenever it's needed.

That's not how any of them got that good in college. They are designed plays where they run from the start, and don't even consider passing.

The NFL will probably never do this, because every team has some RB they pay way too much to sit behind a QB rushing for 170 yards each game.

the NFL doesn't design running plays for their QB for 2 major reasons

1) injuries to the star of your offensive star/leader. it's demoralizing, stupid (both athletically and financially), and a bad idea all around. QBs are generally fragile dudes. not saying there aren't tough badass ones, but compared to a 260lb diesel train DE coming at them, they're gonna get hurt. even guys like vick got injured

2) plays don't work b/c NFL Defenses are a gazillion times better in college. you think that bushleague QB trick draw shit is going to work in the NFL? maybe on the first play or two. but that's it. NFL defense coordinators would LOVE for the offense to have a mobile QB, makes it that much easier to defend against
>> Anonymous
>>411659
#1: Partially true. $$$$ rules the NFL, and having a star player out because of injuries is not good. I don't think that's the major reason, because they pay a RB to do just that, and they're just as important to the offense. I just don't see many teams wishing to pay for 2 rushers to be in the offense at all times, especially when both will be making top dollar. This isn't a #1 RB and a #2 RB that doesn't make much above the league minimum.

#2: This is pure bullshit. NFL defenses might be better, but so are offenses. Offensive lines are just as better as defensive lines. If this point was so true, then you would never see a 100yd rushing game by a RB.
>> Anonymous
>>411698
i know what you're saying, but it's the RB's job to run. the QB is supposed to manage the game and pass to his receivers as well

if you have a QB who can run and want to design plays around that, fuck it. pull your WRs, and put a fuckton of dudes on the o-line. mirite? it's nice having a QB who can run as a BACKUP PLAN, in case the play falls apart, but offense coordinators should always, always form their playbook around moving the ball down field in 'conventional' means (RBs/WRs/TEs)
>> Anonymous
>>411708
Did you see Atlanta when Vick started there? They didn't even have WR to throw to, yet as time progressed, they didn't want him running unless it was a backup plan. They didn't have the talent in either area, passer or receiver, to make that kind of shit work.

Now they do, but they have Ryan, not a running qb.

I think if a team properly utilized a qb they way they are in college football, you may see a change in the way offenses are designed. Too much of it is still the "old school" mentality, where change is bad.

>>411715
I guess that's why everybody is running these WILD formations huh??

I agree with those saying Vick never had any help tho, one overweight TE that had just as bad a case of the drops in the end as Roddy White had prior to this season wasn't cutting it. Vick had no choice but run with that receiving corp, he was a gamebreaker and playmaker and did whatever it took to win the game when he could do it alone. He also lost a step when he broke his leg (lost the breakaway speed), was never quite the same after that, yet he'd still get it done like that time vs the Panthers he dove for the GWTD with his knees hovering a millimeter above the turf. Being a typical stupid thug newport nigger doesn't change the fact that faggot 'analysts' like Jaworski mindlessly hated on him his entire career. He was special on a team full of average at best.

It's more about the defenses being smarter rather than possessing more talent. Running QBs don't work in the NFL. QBs that are mobile and can scramble can work.

Wrong. The reason the option play doesn't work in the NFL is because defensive backs are way too fast. So yes, it is about athleticism, speed especially.
>> Anonymous
>>411773
That's a contributing factor but gimme a break. You can't even begin to compare the complexity of pro defenses to anything you see in a college game.
>> Anonymous
>>411782

I dunno man. They're either going to be in zone or man coverage, might double a guy, might blitz. I'm not sure about the complexities on the defensive side of the football in professional because I am just a mediocre athlete and a fan, but when everyone on the other side of the ball runs a 4.4 you're sure to think twice about beating them with speed.

OMG NFL SOOOOOOOOO FAST

>>411786
The NFL on the defensive side of the ball doesn't work like Madden. Everybody needs to know everyone else's assignments to better understand their own. This argument is better saved for places not on 4chan, though.
>> Anonymous
>>411786
Oh shit, how does I get a 100 yard game against such superior players on defense? Oh yeah, just run the fucking ball.
>> Anonymous
>>411796
is the player with 100 rushing yards a quarterback, taking the time to go through his five step drop and his progression and then decide no reciever is open and then run outside and then turn upfield all while using precious time that the defensive backs use to make the play collapse?

no, so shut the fuck up.
>> Anonymous
>>411814
You're talking about a play designed to fake a defense out. That's not a well designed play that will work very often.

What do you think I was talking about the whole time? That the current way teams utilize running qb's is perfectly fine?

Design a NORMAL play much like they do in COLLEGE, and done. Or are you one of those "OMG NFL IS SOOOOO FAST" guys?
>> Anonymous
>>411823

Are you trying to imply that random scrubs on college teams are just as fast as NFL backs?
>> Anonymous
>>411729
I completely forgot about him, he's not starting or playing at all?
>> Anonymous
>>411843
No, I'm implying that>>411814is a fucking idiot. The idea that dropping back to pass and running around to get out of a play that didn't work as designed is a good utilization of a running QB is a BAD idea. It doesn't work in the NFL. Hell, it doesn't work in college.

What does work in college though, is running QB's that have designed plays to use them to their fullest, not as passers, but as rushers. They get into the NFL and are expected to now play just like Brett Favre. Sorry, that's not where their talent lies.

So yes, well designed plays to use a rushing QB like he was used in college WILL work. Expecting them to run only when a passing play fails to work, just won't. And those saying it can't work, how the fuck do RB get yards? Oh yeah, designed running plays that get them through holes in the defense. The same type of plays work in college and the NFL, and the plays that work for a QB in college can be adapted to the NFL.

NFL teams are resistant because it's "old school".

Direct snap to running back should be standard football play for every team. Then run halfback end around, toss to QB lined up at slot, and throw for touchdown.
>> Anonymous
>>411869
They work, and are efficient. The problem is, people call them "trick plays" these days, because it's not standard strategy when it comes to how the play is run. I'm sure some don't remember when a play action pass wasn't standard, but it was at a time. These days, it's normal and is executed like it's an afterthought. Defenses still fall for it, but we don't call it "OMG TRICK PLAY!"

Coordinators in the NFL need to get out of the stone age.
>> Anonymous
Raiders should be direct snapping to McFadden. Obviously he's capable.
>> Anonymous
>>411881
Why they don't do this is probably because of their terrible owner. The fact that he calls plays, and not a coaching team at times, shows how fucking retarded their system is.

I understand why players there hate to sign their contracts.
