Crosby, saving the NHL one game at a time. CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
he Detroit Red Wings' victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup finals opener was the highest-rated and most-watched cable telecast of the championship round in six years.

The Red Wings' 4-0 win on Saturday night had a 1.8 national rating -- drawing over 2.3 million viewers. The rating was the highest for an NHL game on Versus, topping the audience that watched the Penguins' Game 2 victory over Philadelphia in this year's Eastern Conference finals.

Only Lance Armstrong's final ride in the 2005 Tour de France had a higher rating in Versus history (2.1).

Versus will show Game 2 of the finals on Monday night before the series shifts to NBC for the remaining games.

The Game 1 rating is a 157 percent increase over last year's opener and a 100 percent rise from two years ago.

Too bad the Red Wings are going to win the series

2.3 million viewers tuned in to watch crosby fail spectacularly. I can live with that. You know, if I wasn't in Canada where tv ratings for hockey were never in trouble to begin with.

wow. this suppsoed savior can only pull in those numbers??

get ready to lose your league nhlfags

>The rating was the highest for an NHL game on Versus
>Versus

That's like a bodybuilder beating a five-year-old at arm wrestling.
>> Sneak !!+y8MDiWrdyT
So when Detroit wins Game 2, over 2.3 million will watch see it?
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>117284

That remains to be seen. I wasn't happy with the game but I expect a completely different performance in game 2.

The most important fact is that the NHL is doing much better on VERSUS. I can't wait to see the ratings during prime time on NBC.
>> Anonymous
This is why we know you started watching the penguins when the pens drafted Sidney Crosby, because you still look to him as a savior, when you know it'll bring in more bandwagoning faggots than what boston has (maybe had before 18-1?).
>> Anonymous
>>117289
>I expect a completely different performance in game 2.

So Pittsburgh is suddenly going to figure out overnight how to overcome a puck-possession style of play Detroit has been using to dominate the league for years?

oh lol
>> Anonymous
If you weren't a bandwagoning faggot, wouldn't you just support your team without masturbating to tv ratings? I can't say I've ever encountered a genuine sports fan needing to rally to how many people in America tuned into the game. You might as well be an American Idol fan.

how many times did the pens?

>The most important fact is that the NHL is doing much better on VERSUS
>The most important fact

So the ratings are now more important than team performance, bad or good?

Oh dear, you're letting slip that you're Bettman more obviously with every post you make.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>117297

I didn't realize that being habitually chased out of the playoffs in the early rounds was considered "dominating" the NHL.
>> Anonymous
>>117294
The Penguins sure as hell did!

HIOOOOOOO!
>> Anonymous
>>117299
Because that's NEVER happened to the Penguins!
>> Anonymous
>>117299
By that logic, you constantly posting that outdated pic of Sid with his trophies is completely and utterly irrelevant because the Penguins got their asses handed to them in that year's first round.
>> Anonymous
And now that Bettman figures schmucks actually watch Versus, expect a new, 12-year exclusivity deal to be signed with the channel.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>117303

I fucking hope not.
>> Anonymous

It would put money in his pocket and keep the NBA on all the popular channels.

You can hope all you want, but you know it's going to happen.

News flash: More people tuning into VS isn't good. In case you haven't noticed, VS is a shitty, shitty network, meaning promotion of more shitty, shitty hockey 'fans'.
>> Anonymous
>The Red Wings' 4-0 win on Saturday night had a 1.8 national rating -- drawing over 2.3 million viewers.

That many people turned in to watch such a boring, boring game?

Shows over, folks. The New NHL is finished.
>> Anonymous
Already better than last years final even though the first game was a drubbing of the pens. At least the game had some really good moments. The entire first period was fun to watch, and a good chunk of the third was good too. I hope it shapes up into a good series.

Anaheim/Ottawa was terrible. Ottawa didn't even have flashes of playing well. Even though the pens got shutout in the first game at least they had some really good chances.

The last really good final I saw was the 93/94 one with the Rangers vs. The Canucks. After that it was pretty bland up until that Carolina/Edmonton series.
>> Anonymous
>>117285

That's why I'm watching.

The NHL still isn't doing that much better, the same amount of people who tuned into game 1, will tune into game 2,3 and 4, it isn't going to change much, if at all.
>> Anonymous
I'd love to find out how many people tuned into the NBA game that was taking place AT THE EXACT SAME TIME. My guess is that it was a wee bit larger than 2.3 mil.
>> Anonymous
Don't a lot of people in America not receive VS? Bettman works his ass off to make sure his product can't be viewed by the masses. It's really embarassing.
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>117333

I'd guess around 4.8 million.
>> Anonymous
Fuck the Red Wings. Go Pens!
>> Anonymous
>>117337

Fuck both of you.
>> Anonymous
>>117334

God, I think it's like.. 5 million maybe? I forget the actual number, it's dwarfed in comparison to how many have ESPN (everyone who has cable/satellite lol). It doesn't help that most people either don't have VS or have to pay for it on some sports tier. It's sad, although, I don't think the ratings would be much higher even if they were on ESPN. 1.8 rating is still pathetic no matter how you look at it.

6.37 million people watched the Red Wings beat the Flyers in 1997 :(

Now this season, they can barely pull over 2 million, so, going by the numbers, only 600k more people tuned in, might have something to do with the fact that both teams are in slightly bigger markets, Detroit especially, because I can bet there are a lot of Red Wings fans in Windsor.

Hmm, viewership spiked in 1997, 2002... I notice a trend
>> CapitalistBastard !!f/pELCnjRD0
>>117367

You have to keep in mind the disastrous decline of the league since the lockout and the channel in which the content is delivered.

If they don't top 3 and half million on NBC, that wouldn't be a good sign.
>> Anonymous
>>117367

It also helps that both teams are in the US, so yeah, the ratings should go up. Do the Neilson's include Canadia?
>> Anonymous
>>117370
CBC has their own numbers. They're somewhere on NHL.com but I can't be assed to dig them up. I think there was a marginal decline in viewership from last playoffs, though.
>> Anonymous
>>117369

No doubt the lockout hurt, but it was declining well before that.

>It also helps that both teams are in half-decent US hockey markets

Fixed. Seriously, even people in Carolina don't give a shit about the Hurricanes, why would anyone else in the States?
>> Anonymous
>>117373

I wonder what those numbers (CBC's) would look like if Toronto made it to the finals...
oh god I can't say that with a straight face..

>>117378
Everyone in southern Ontario would watch the game. Everyone else in the country would throw their TVs out their windows.

>>117377

True, though, that year, I watched, mainly to see Brind'amour win the cup, and because I liked them when they were in Hartford, but I'm a hockey fan, no normal schmuk is gonna watch that .

>>117380

Heh, yeah, I can't imagine the amount of pole waxing the CBC does for the Leafs. It would make me turn it off that's for sure.
