Dear /sp/,

The NHL is the most player/team biased league in sporting. I know they try to get out there as a dying league and spark interest in certain teams and players, but for Christ's sake every goddamn time I log on to their website to look at the fucking scores, I see the top article is either about Cindy Crosby or the goddamn Penguins, or most recently RYAN MILLER.

It's cool to reward good players with stories and shit, but I have never seen this much favoritism ever.

tl;dr: NHL licks the balls of Crosby, the Penguins, Sarah Palin, etc.

Reporting about a team that made it to the finals last year is bad? Let me see, I see them talking about the Patriots and Lakers a whole lot, and their franchise players. Players that also somewhat represent the best in the league.

Stop crying because your team is terrible and has 0 superstars worth reporting.

Quit pretending the Penguins are good.

The only reason people are on his nuts is because all the players better than him are foreigners. So stupid people here in america are like "hurp de durp, Canadians and Americans are superior". Even though it's pretty obvious the Euro style has taken over. At least Detroit has been accepting of the European takeover of hockey.

Except when it comes to Ovechkin, but he deserves a spotlight.

Even then, he doesn't get near the coverage that Crosby gets, even though he's better.

Uhh, I hate Crosby as much as the next guy, but Iginla and Phaneuf are not newsworthy. Someone tell Iginla to end his own life, please.

Why didn't you just say you were new to the NHL?
>> Detroiter !zg3qAF9X/E

In case you don't know. I hate everything Calgary. Nor do I want to hear anything about negroes playing hockey. Phaneuf is good, but he's not Nick Lidstrom. And I'd rather watch Ovie/Crosby/Malkin/Hossa/Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Kovalchuk/Vanek than Iginla.

Phaneuf doesn't deserve to be recognized.

Calgary will finish last or second to last in the Northwest this year, YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST.

That's because Bettman's been trying to turn the NHL into the NBA for how many years now?

It's a little sickening. I understand the point of having a face to draw in fans, but ice hockey is first-and-foremost a team game. Market both aspects, goddammit.

I was watching the Carolina/Pittsburgh game last night and was surprised by Crosby's play.

He let Malkin out-dive him.

you do realize that 90% of people that watch the nhl are watching either because of crosby, the penguins, or palin? its not their fault that the nhl is tanking and they have to singlehandedly keep it afloat

this may be hyperbole, but anyone that cant admit that the nhl is losing ground is deluding themselves. so the nhl props up superstars like crosby and ovechkin to draw a new audience to the game. why else do you think they had so many political themed events? they want to capitalize on the attention that the politicians are getting because they desperately need the ratings

>>427644
There is definitely truth to this.

>>427629
This, on the other hand, is just a retarded Pensfag.

>>427644
I'm just getting into hockey and I never gave a fuck about Crosby or Ovechkin or anything because I don't give a shit about the teams they are on
I don't really see how star players can draw non-fans to watch any league... I mean, wouldn't you have to already be a fan to appreciate them? Do you think someone who has never watched an NFL game appreciates how good of a quarterback Peyton Manning is?
>> Anonymous
>>427644anyone that cant admit that the nhl is losing ground is deluding themselves

I really don't think the NHL is signifcantly less popular since Crosby entered the league. It's like you just pulled that opinion out of your ass or something.
>> Anonymous
>>427649
my point is that the nhl is losing ratings to the nfl, mlb, and maybe the nba. so their best idea is to do what these other leagues do: have alot of media exposure for their "best" players, in hopes that people will be drawn to watching hockey if they know that they can watch a superstar in action. i dont care what anyone says, watching crosby or ovechkin at their best is very exciting and can be huge in bringing ratings to the league

>>427653

It's been more or less the same really, even after Crosby entered the league. It might be more popular in Pissburgh now, now that they actually have a team that is relevant, and not bottom feeders.

>losing ratings to the NFL
NFL games really don't compete with NHL times. Not that that matters as the NFL rapes every other sports league in the US, ratings-wise.
>losing ratings to the MLB
Understandable, but the only overlap is during the MLB post-season. The influence is minimal.
>losing ratings to the NBA
Probably not directly. But the NBA is broadcast on a more accessible cable station. Though, I honestly doubt if most NHL ratings come from VS and not the local sportscasting channels.

The NHL does need marketing, and it isn't being marketed near enough. However, putting all the NHL marketing stock in just Crosby is patently retarded. Believe it or not, the very fact he can play on only one team hampers his appeal. In the same vein, he can only be playing one team on any given night. Bettman needs to stop sucking Crosby's cock and diversify.
>> Anonymous
>>427683It's been more or less the same really

Which is an absolute fucking miracle after the lock-out.
>> Anonymous
if the nhl wants more ratings, they need to make the game more exciting, and i think the best way to do that is by making the goal wider so theres more scoring

Why does the NHL need more scoring? They outscore soccer games nightly, yet Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Probably because dirt poor people can play it.
