I know only a little about US Soccer and almost nothing about Football outside the US.
What are the leagues? In the US, there is MLS, which only has US teams (That might change I guess). There is also MLB, which has US and Canadian teams.
But in Football outside the US, a league covers a whole continent? When a team from England plays a team from France, is it a championship type game? I hear names like "Manchester United", "AC Milan", "Arsenal" and "Real Madrid". These are all in the same league? Or these are just the most popular teams from different leagues?

First of all MLB is Major League Baseball I'm not sure why you brought that up. Anyway, in Europe most countries have a top league FA Premier in England, La Liga in Spain, Ligue 1 in France, and Series A in Italy. The clubs you mention all belong to one of those leagues. There is also the UEFA champions league where the top ranked teams from each league will compete for the European Cup.

I was just saying that the MLB extended beyond the US borders.

I see. So do each of these leagues have sort of a NY Yankees of that league? A team that wins a lot and is in the most championships by far?

Well the Premiership has been won 8 out of 14 times by Manchester United. La Liga has long be dominated by Real Madrid 29 titles, and FC Barcelona (18) over 75 years. Serie A has been won 27 times by Juventus and 17 by AC Milan. Ligue 1 is the most balanced with AS Saint-Étienne winning 10 times out of some 70 years.

When they have the European championships, does each league send an all-star team to the tournament? Or just the best team in that leauge?
From an American perspective, there are so many teams. You have Germany, Spain, England, France and Italy that are supposed to be good. I assume they are they best in Europe because they went far in the World Cup. And that's only Europe. There's also South America, Asia and Africa. It's like.. hard to follow.

No, they have, like 96 teams in the UEFA tourney.

Rangers (known by outsiders as Glasgow Rangers) of Scotland are the most successful British club, and the most successful club in the history of football with 106 major trophy wins.

They hold a world record of 51 domestic league championships, and the total of 106 major trophies is broken down into
51 league titles
31 scottish fa cup wins
24 scottish league cup wins
1 European Cup Winners Cup [now defunct] win

Since the 1950s, the winning club from each domestic league used to also enter the "European Champions Cup" which is played alongside the domestic leagues. In 1992/3 season, the governing body in Europe changed this format from straight knockout rounds to include 2 small groups of 4 where the two group winners would contest the final. It was also renamed the UEFA Champions League at that time.

A couple of seasons later they expanded the tournament to include not only the champions of each domestic league, but the top few teams from the supposed best leagues such as Spain, Italy, England, France, Germany, and they have tinkered with the format ever since, and now hold 8 groups of 4 with the top 2 from each group going into the knockout stages, still competing for the same European Cup.

The UEFA cup, which has run since the 1950s also, previously also called the Fairs Cities Cup, was traditionally for the 2nd/3rd/4th placed teams (depending on what league it was), and was also always a knockout tourney. It always did have a high participation level of around 96 clubs. This has now increased.

There was also the European Cup Winners Cup which was set up for the winners of the domestic cup trophy like the FA Cup etc, to compete for. If the league winners were also the cup winners then the domestic cup runners up would compete.
This trophy was swallowed up by the UEFA cup in 1995 or 6 I think.

The UEFA cup was also modernised to include a group stage. Clubs 3rd placed in their groups and knocked out of the Champions League "parachute" into the UEFA cup.

So the "Champions League" is now for the 'elite' clubs and we find the stupid situation where some elite clubs are given direct entry to the group stages while some country's champions are denied this, and made to play qualifiers to reach the lucrative group stages. Some argue that has devalued the name of Champions League, and the trophy itself.

The UEFA cup has now been devalued as well by having less and less skilled teams in the earlier stages as the top teams are now generally in the Champions League, and the lesser teams are given less chance of winning by some of the Champions League teams entering the UEFA cup at the knockout stages.

So this is the European version of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the Copa Libertadores, the Asian Champions League, etc.

Club teams from different countries competing for one trophy, outside of their domestic leagues.

I'm liking the UEFA Cup this year, Blackburn's got an easy group. They only need 1 point in two games to advance.

I'm liking the Champions League this year. Liverpool have already qualified and can finish top if they beat PSV. It doesn't guarentee a easier draw but it increases the chance of one.

Also with Chelsea dropping points tonight (Spurs 2-1 Chelsea) I think Liverpool are still in with a chance of winning the league. Man U WILL slip up sometime during the season. Plus both Chelsea and Man U have to play against Liverpool at Anfield still.

Don't write us off yet.

Not all of them.

Places where the sun doesn't shine much in winter (Sweden, Russia, etc.) often will play a schedule from February to September or so, as does the MLS. Most of the other leagues play a season from August/September to May or so.

Not enough money for a season ticket this year, next season though. For cup games, etc I sit in gallowgate though :)
