It's time to discuss something:

Vincent Lecavalier's contract. He signed a 85 million dollar contract for 11 years....11 years. Does anyone else this is stupid on the part of the Lightning to sign him for 11 years?

By the time the contract is over he will be 39.

it idea good.

It'll be good if the salary cap continues to rise at a good rate. If it slows down or starts to drop, Tampa is fucked.

contracts like this are stupid. there should be a max of 6-7 years per contract

Somehow, in ways that defy science, it still dosen't seem as stupid as that Finger deal.

Tampa is currently being run by a proper GM, I believe.

Isn't it a pair of new owners just throwing money about?

Pretty much. They have money for atleast a year, so it seems like there putting in all or nothing for a cup run in the next 2 years before all the young kids need resigning...just like montreal...

Its a popular thing to do with your star players. The salary cap for a sport is almost guaranteed to rise each season. Instead of giving a 5 year deal and then a 6 year deal or several 2-4 year deals in which each 1st year of the contract will be substantially more than the contract year from the previous contract, the entire contract is just lumped together so the salary gradually rises with the cap without spiking that would otherwise happen with short term contracts.

They also don't have to worry about losing him to FA this way.

Well, Mike Richards is signed until 2021! He'll be 35-36 when it ends. I like the guy and all, but that's madness! (Inb4 Sparta)

by the time the contract is ending he'll be making 1 million a year, its a front loaded contract. good idea to me.

Don't get all excited about the dollars, they are almost irrelevant. Big contracts are front-loaded, back-loaded, bonused out...they gave Vinny a little more money in exchange for taking him off of the free agent market for the next seven or so years.

He will not make it to the end of the contract. They almost never do.

Is there an out clause for the team? I just know there's a full no trade clause, plus a player of his caliber should still be a NHL quality player into his mid 30's

Vinny is one of two or three guys in the league I would not hesitate this give this contract to.

I don't know details of this particular contract but usually there are options for both the team and the player, that come into play after the majority of the contract has passed.

An eleven year contrat is relevant for like seven to eight years, after that it's a toss up. If Lecavalier is still great, he'll get this contract thrown out and get a new one. If he sucks, TB will trade him or cut him.
