I haven't seen to many teams with an 84-78 third order record outperform by a large margin twice in a row.

They're like last year's Mariners just not as bad.

they aren't going to be better next year
at best they can hope to be only slightly worse

What? How are the Angels last year's Mariners?

I think they'll be able to finish first in that shit division and get hot at the right time.
>> Anonymous
>>422745
Which part of that statement confused you so much?

Pro Tip: In most pro sports, a team outperforming its pythagorean (with third order being an even more accurate version of pythagorean) will usually regress the next year. A team underperforming will usually progress the next year.

This is not always true, and is a rough analysis, but it is usually true to some degree. And the Angels obliterated the record for the biggest overperformance (with 16 wins).
>> Anonymous
>>422742
Um, AL East deflated record v an AL West inflated one. They probably have about the same number of wins if they are in the same division. Plus first round losses are the hardest to take away any real meaning from. If the Rays/Red Sox series goes 5 games like a first rounder, they only play 4 games as well.

Since their 2002 Championship, they have made the playoffs all but two years (03 and 06) and have had only one losing season. By the looks of it, this team has been consistently decent. Last year, they had a 94 win season. If your theory is correct, then how could an overperforming team win their division two years in a row?

Not to mention that the only threat I see in the West is the Rangers.
>> ???????????
DBacks vs. Mariners, DBacks sweep.

Which is not even imprtant at all since THAT.BIRD. shall win super bowl. and there is nothing you guise can do about it.
>> Anonymous
>>422774
I don't know about their third order record, but the Angels pythagorean in 2007 was 90 wins. Not the same thing.

And by your logic, a team that's good for several straight years should never be expected to decline. "I don't care how many prognostication tools proven to be accurate I have at my disposal, I'm going to throw my hands up and pretend things never change!"

And winning your division and being the favorite in the playoffs are totally different things. The Angels odds to win the division next year aren't bad, but the odds of beating two AL opponents in the post season are.

The playoffs are a crap shoot, but if you pick the better teams you'll be right more often than if you guess.

Almost every player.

BJ Upton already said he wants to test free-agency, and after this postseason, there's no way in hell the Rays are going to be able to afford him.

>>422919
>>422896

The only two predictions that seem to have any thought put into them right now.

Here are mine:

AL East/WC: Boston/Tampa Bay - I see these two teams going back and forth all season, since the Rays are going to be pretty much the same team, probably some small improvements, and the Red Sox are probably going to make some upgrades to the pitching staff, and infield.
AL Central: Indians/Twins - Indians proved they were good in the 2nd half of 2008, and most everyone will be back. Biggest concern is a starting pitcher.
AL West: Angels - No one else in the West is even close to competing.

NL East: Phillies - Most everyone will be back, plus they'll have a bit of money to spend
NL Central: Cubs - They may have failed in the playoffs, but they proved they know how to GET there.
NL West: No fucking idea. That division sucks so much it's impossible to tell.
NL WC: Mets - I don't see them collapsing 3 years in a row.

>>423199

BJ Upton is plenty free to test free agency once he is eligible for it in 2013.

hitters peak at 27. Pitchers peak earlier, and pitchers with bad mechanics, like Garza and Shields, peak even earlier and break earlier.

That's not a reason to sage me you dumb shit. The Cubs won 97 games this year and it is of my belief that they can fucking improve in the offseason - by getting a lefty that can hit for shit in right field for instance, and maybe a fifth starter that's not Marquis - this is one year where you can predict the Cubs and not be totally off-base, you jackass.

I don't say it every year because I'm not retarded. I know that the Cubs very rarely field a team that's capable of winning it all. The Cubs this year DID have a team that could have done it, so that's why I think they can do it next year. 2004 has been the only year in my life where I've actually thought the world series was a possibility at the beginning of the year.

This is the second time, let's hope it's not as ridiculously shitty as 2004 was.

Also, you're right. Most Cubs fans do say that but most Cubs fans are retarded.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. The White Sox returned a lot of their players after their stunning World Series victory in 2005 (All but Aaron Rowand in Center Field, I believe) and we just choked HARD in 2006. But I will say that we totally overperformed that year in the playoffs which is probably why we crashed so hard the next year.
