Another medal count thread Black Star on another cpu !x8ngkAZjXE
>The Chinese government, in fact, spent at least $1 billion on athlete development in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics, said U.S.-based Chinese athletics expert Xu Guoqui. By comparison, the U.S. Olympic Committee's annual budget is $150 million, with much of it coming from non-governmental sources.

while the population difference doesn't matter much imo The sheer difference in spending for something as trivial as the olympics is pretty shocking.

For fellow americans like me who take this as srs business maybe this can ease the pain of probably losing in the gold count.

I can't say I'm entirely surprised by that number. For the Chinese, as we've been hearing over and over again, the Olympics is as much about the athletics as it is about the politics.

lol when americans get the most golds they're like haha fags USA! USA!

when america doesn't get most golds, they're like BUT BUT BUT THEY'RE SPENDING MORE THAN US ON TRAINING. IT'S NOT FAIR BAWWWWW
>> Black Star on another cpu !x8ngkAZjXE

can't ever remember gloating about having most golds.

Total medals however...

In fact I didn't even know the rest of the world went by most gold even when severely outnumbered in other medal count.

This doesn't ease a thing. Spending is what makes top class athletes. China made more than us.

hey its fun to make up numbers and pull $1 billion out of my ass when I am based in the US and have absolutely no access to any Chinese governmental sauces.

The average Chinese citizen has no access to their government but 'U.S.-based Chinese athletics expert Xu Guoqui' surely does because she is an 'expert'.

are you stupid or just a nigger? can you use some logic and not blindly believe everything you read?

China - which has a per capita GDP that is 1/10th of the US - is spent $1B on athlete development and the US - the richest nation in the world - only spent $150M. DUUURRRRRRRRR

Most of the US spend their own personal money to train instead of relying on government funds.

For example, Dara Torres spent over $100,000 on personal trainers and masseuses to help her train for the Olympics. Also, Shawn Johnson's parents had to get 3 mortgages just to keep her in the Iowa Gym.

Shit isn't cheap for American athletes either. All this points out is that you've been mislead by another so called "objective" American news source.

>>286709
But the U.S. schools and colleges almost all have serious sport programmes, right? That system is unique in the world.

Cut it out already. When it comes to national news, which country isn't "objective"? Stop making it seem like the U.S. is the only one.

"An historic" isn't technically incorrect, dumbass. The H in historic isn't always aspirated, so both "a" and "an" are acceptable.

>> Black ? Star !x8ngkAZjXE

Why would the usa spend a billion dollars on some competition we always win? Im surprised we even spent 150 million on a contest that is completely arbitrary.

China on the other hand after being awarded the hosting spot didn't want to look like an ass on it's own soil.

Completely believable they spent so much more than us.

Stop being so dense.

The US athletes spend just as much, if not more, than China when it comes to so called "useless" things such as sports. It's just that the Government is replaced by private companies.

Athletes...not government. The thread was never about how much the athletes spent. It was about how much the GOVERNMENTS spent.

And the athletes get private money but they don't spend most of it on training. They get sponsorships to live off of. Not to win gold for the glory of the motherland.

The 1 billion china spent was to train as many athletes in as many disciplines as possible so they could rake in the gold and present themselves as an advanced nation.
>> Black ? Star !x8ngkAZjXE
>>287053
I meant trivial as compared to you know the mortage crisis, falling dollar, reliance on oil, failing educational system, trillion dollar deficit and all that jazz.

Sports definitely holds a great spot in my heart.
>> Anonymous
>>287078
And what does the Chinese government care about most of that? Are they going to send their billion dollars over here to help out the poor Americans?
>> Black ? Star !x8ngkAZjXE
>>287080
.... when I said trivial I was talking about american sports compared to american problems.

The main point was arguing was that the chinese were more worried about their image rather than the problems which is why it's understandable that they would spend more.
>> He stands for Gold !6swqhWbYzo
>>287075
Who spends the money is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, both countries are taking money out of the economy and putting them into, according to you, "trivial" things such as sports.

And the Chinese athletes are paid money by the government as well as receive free first world living conditions. This "for the motherland" stuff is just some exaggeration made to paint the Chinese as robots. Fact is, if sports didn't lead Chinese athletes to a better life, barely anyone would do it.

Doesn't take much to have a better life. Some girl was happy just got get a 3 bedroom house for her family for olympics.

Still doesn't prove they are happy being athletes.

And again I didn't argue that we didn't spend money on sports. What I argued that the olympics were far more important for china than it was for us and the difference in spending shows.

Most americans who get money from private orgs are getting it for their own private funds in exchange for getting acknowledgement for that sponsorship. Not to train them into super athletes who train 8 hours a day 6 days a week to take gold in ping pong.
