Tibet has always been part of the Chinese empire, since the earliest dynasties. It was never it's own country, China did not "invade" it. Hell even the U.S. government along with the rest of the world referred to it as the Tibetan Autonomous Province of China.
Before China intervened, Tibet was a corrupt and neglectful feudal theocracy. The rich monastery officials and leaders of the religious sect owned huge plots of land which were worked literally by hundreds to thousands of slaves per area. There was no infrastructure, the country as shit poor, and it was as backward both technologically and educationally as most third world middle eastern countries are today. This was a direct result of the great deal of autonomy the Chinese government gave them, and realizing that the province was doing nothing but wasting away, the government announced their intention to intervene in the late 1940's.
The Buddhist leaders like all leaders, were afraid to relinquish their power and began spreading propoganda among their slaves and supporters that the PRC would kill their families and such, and in doing so this ensured a following for when the Buddhist leaders left into exile.
