Soxfag here. I have secretly rooted for the Rays for a few years now. They always had a pretty decent offense that could be great at any time. Only problem has been pitching. Things are great now, and maybe they'll stay that way, but a few concerns: Troy Percival, can he continue being this good? Andy Sonnanstine, is it a matter of time before he gets lit up? Edwin Jackson, the enigma Matt Garza, can he become as good as we think he can? Is Dan Wheeler still an effective reliever?
Outside of that, if Jackson and Garza can get it and keep it together (an Garza shut down the Yanks tonight it seems), with Shields and Kazmir as the front of the rotation, they might have the best 1-2 combo in the AL East, which is really weird to say. Seriously. The Red Sox have Beckett, and an occasionally good Dice-K. The rest of the rotation is pretty enigmatic. Same with the Yankees. Wang is a pretty damn good pitcher, but Pettite got really worked last year and there is no telling if he can keep it up. The rest of their rotation is in flux (yes I know Mussina has been doing well). Orioles will fail. Blue Jays also have a good rotation anchored by the beast known as Halladay.
The Rays have a pretty good shot to finish second if they can keep the pitching staff healthy and effective, because they WILL score runs.
