Kobe vs MJ Anonymous
The Lakers are playing the best ball in the playoffs right now. Kobe is the best player in the league. So let's assume for a sec the Lakers win the title. With their current roster, they could be title contenders for another 5 years. So /sp/, I pose the question; When do we start putting Kobe at/above MJ? Now I know Kobe will never do for the league what MJ did, but in terms of pure basketball skills, doesn't another ring or 2 put him in the conversation?
>> Anonymous
no it does not

no

>>91791
>>91792
Why not? We know he can score just as easily, and 81 beats Jordan's best. He is a top-flight defender, although I think MJ has him here. He will most likely win multiple titles with completely different teammates, something MJ never accomplished. He's proven he's as clutch as anyone, and he has the killer instinct to destroy his opponent. So what else would he have to do?
>> Anonymous
>>91796
Not rape people.
>> Anonymous
He's too far from Jordan's awesomeness. He may have scored 81, but he didn't have Jordan's consistency or just consistent awesomeness. Jordan, even in just his third year, was already an awesome leader.

He also trusted his teammates. No complaining or whining shit from him.
>> Anonymous
>>91803
>No complaining or whining shit from him.

You don't really know too much about MJ do you? He was a much bigger asshole than Kobe. Maybe he didn't whine, but that's only because he was yelling "You fucking suck and don't belong on the court with me" at them. There's a reason you never see him hanging with any of his old teammates these days (except for his bodyguard Oak).

And he was not an awesome leader in his third 3yr. He was a fantastic scorer that was a total ballhog.

>The Lakers are playing the best ball in the playoffs right now.
No. They're playing the worst opponents in the playoffs.

>Kobe is the best player in the league.
Best at what? He didn't lead the league in any single category in the season. Pts, assists, rebounds, etc. Don't give me the MVP thing as if it's a credible argument, the NBA is just showing its biggest cash cow some love. CP3 is clearly the most valuable player in terms of basketball not marketing.

>So let's assume for a sec the Lakers win the title. With their current roster, they could be title contenders for another 5 years
No. There are a lot of switchups after this season, and a lot of teams are just going to get better and better. The Hornets, Warriors, Magic- hell even the Celtics although I hate them, will still be an enormous powerhouse next year. The Lakers will only be title contenders if they get lucky with matchups like they did this year, playing the two worst teams in the West (in terms of skill) in succession.

>So /sp/, I pose the question; When do we start putting Kobe at/above MJ?

Never. To even ask this question lends me to believe that you're just a bandwagon fanboy who didn't even watch basketball when Jordan actually played. Anyone who watched Jordan (excluding the rabid Kobefags) would scoff at the idea of equating someone like Kobe with him.

I'm not a Laker fan and have been a NBA addict since roughly 84.

I didn't realize you had to lead the league in a category to be the best ALL-AROUND player in the league. We all know Kobe could lead the league in scoring if he wanted to without breaking a sweat.

Lakers playing the worst opponents? I think the East has some more trash. Even granting that, they are doing so because they played the best in the conference in the regular season and earned the #1 seed, that's not "getting lucky." And they haven't lost a game yet, so they are doing what they should be doing; not dropping games to inferior teams like the Spurs, Cavs, Pistons, Magic, and Celtics have. So yes, they are playing the best ball.

And to say the Warriors will be powerhouses next year proves to me you know jack shit. They're great to watch, but that's it. The Magic couldn't hang in the West. I see some epic Hornets/Lakers battles in the future.

No post above said there was "No complaining or whining shit from him." Just pointing out that the guy knows nothing about MJ.

Jordan was one of the biggest assholes to step on the court, he was hard on teammates (far worse than kobe), hard on management, and one of the biggest trash talkers.

Also Kobe isn't a rapist, he fucked a whore.

>I didn't realize you had to lead the league in a category to be the best ALL-AROUND player in the league
Again, people like you can continue to stick your fingers in your ears whenever Chris Paul is mentioned regarding that. It's amusing.

>We all know Kobe could lead the league in scoring if he wanted to without breaking a sweat.
Who all knows that? Deluded Lakersfans? Making a completely opinionated claim and laying it as a fact doesn't make it any more true.

> they played the best in the conference in the regular season and earned the #1 seed, that's not "getting lucky."
Actually it is, considering 9 different teams over the course of the season held #1 seed, several holding it for a long time. The Lakers had a much easier schedule near the end of the season compared to the competitors for the spot. To say that anyone definitively deserved first place in the West is just dismissive hubris, which you seem to use a lot of.

>And they haven't lost a game yet, so they are doing what they should be doing;
Thank you for reinforcing my notion that they play shitty teams. The fact that the Nuggets even got into the playoffs is an insult to the Western conference. And the big bad Jazz actually struggled against a Houston that was missing Yao and was playing with several of its core players noticably injured (McGrady, Alston, Head, Landry). Houston lost game two because of a flop by Kirilenko which saved the game, that series could have turned out much more differently.

>not dropping games to inferior teams like the Spurs, Cavs, Pistons, Magic, and Celtics have. So yes, they are playing the best ball.
Dropping games? Oh wait, you mean like playing harder opponents. You honestly believe that the Lakers could have swept anyone BUT the Nuggets? Delusion more.

That tends to happen when you're responsible for 6 championships in 8 years. And if you're honestly using trash talking as an argument, thanks for convincing me that you never watched the NBA before 2000.

EVERYONE trash talked, Barkley gave this whole 5 minute interview about it, and how it was a defining aspect of the game in his time period and how it's virtually gone now.

You didn't "win" the argument so stop acting like you know what you're talking about, if anything you just proved you know nothing about Jordan and his era.

Jordan was all of those things when he was jacking up shots over three defenders when a teammate was open under the damn basket.
He literally drove some teammates out of rotations with his assholness, that's what happens when you have a superstar teamed with a pushover coach, Doug Collins. Wasn't until Jackson told him to buy into a team system that he ever won anything.

That was mainly due to shitty decisions they tried to make for the sake of money which would ultimately hurt the franchise. (like when they tried to trade Pippen and MJ threatening to quit being the only thing that stopped them).

KG or Nash? Please. If you said Duncan, I could see the argument, but you can't be "the greatest" if you can't win the title.

And saying Kobe can't pass is just ridiculous. I guess you missed the nail in the coffin bucket last night where Kobe splits a double team w/ a spin move, jumps, and wraps a perfect pass to Gasol right behind Okur's head. That was his team leading 6th assist. No, he can't pass like Nash, but saying he can't pass is ignorant.

I'm just saying jordan isn't as gosly as people in this thread make him out to be. Basketball doesn't start with Jordan. there are plenty of players who where better, MJ just had the most commerials. Also wasn't jordan in his 30's when he won his first championship? Kobe is 29, he could retire with way more than 6. If he does then it would be fair to ask this question. to early to tell.

>> Anonymous
>>91867

No. Your logic is horribly horribly flawed. Basketball above all is a team sport. Saying who is the best single PLAYER of their time has absolutely no correlation with the number of rings they have.

I'm a Spursfag, i couldn't even name our entire second string from the 1999 2003 championships, but they all have rings. Incredible players like Ewing have never gotten a ring, but someone sitting a bench that won a championship predicated on the effort of 5-7 other people have. That's a retarded argument.

>> Anonymous
>>91876

Numbers are a good indicator, but by no means an absolute. You can't accurately quantify overall effort and performance.

Rather I would say it's a mix of their personal stats and how well they inspire and maximize their teammates performance. I would say Jordan was the greatest of his time because he trusted people like Pippen and Kukoc to make plays and make the final shot if necessary.

He just as often trusted himself of course, but that's what happens when you're the greatest player in at least a few decades.

Another thing about using raw numbers to judge player to player is what position they played.
(take it in this case Jordan and Bryant both play SG), but making comparisons like Shaq vs. Kobe vs. Bird vs. Nash etc etc is a very inappropriate time to use pure stats to compare.

As a Spurs fag, I love Tony Parker and he's an incredible attacker. But even if he averaged say, 30 points per game next season (everything else the same), I would still say CP3 is overwhelmingly a better point guard and by extension a better player. You're best when you make your team better by playing your role well, and every role was designed with a way to augment your team.

The reason hypothetical guesswork is stupid is because there are too many factors involved.

So he wins more rings. How many? In how many years? With which teammates? Averaging how much per season? Against what difficulty opponents?

There's no point talking about something that demands too many variables. Michael Jordan's career is solidified, which is why most of this thread was devoted to proving something that COULD be argued - that he IS better than Kobe. Not wasting time arguing "Is he better than Kobe COULD be"

At the PG you have Avery Johnson, a great on the ball defender that could stay in front of CP3. And the Spurs had shooters like Elie, Kerr, and Sean Elliot that could certainly shut down Stoyo who's numbers have been declining the last couple of years and will be even worse next year.

Comparing him to Jordan is a joke. Jordan played in a better era. With Jordan Rules there was harder defense. Not to mention the fact that Bryant is just a Jordan biter. Besides, Lebron is on a much faster rate of being better than Jordan.

Jordan cheated on his wife all the time that is why Kobe is better. He is a better person then that asshole.

Kobe is a better shooter and has more range.

Jordan was a better ball handler.

I dont think Kobe has ever dunked from the free-throw line so Jordan gets the dunk/hops advantage.

Jordan is taller, and I assume that he is stronger.

Both were awesome clutch shooters.

Jordan has more recorded infidelities than Kobe has, though Kobe's was obviously a much bigger story.

Kobe feuded with Shaq and helped break up a 3-championship team.

MJ also was involved in a betting incident that forced him to hide and play (lol)baseball for 2-3 years.

Kobe was/is widely derided as a selfish player, though that image is currently changing.

MJ is a documented asshole who will never be hired to help broadcast a game because of his faggotry.

Well, I grew up with Kobe, so Kobe WINSSSSSSS.!!!

bad draft pick decisions have nothing to do with a player's skill and ability. mj IS the greatest player of all time.

Pippen has went on record to say Kobe is a better player then MJ, who would know better then him, someone who played alongside MJ , and has watched Kobe play

Alright, but both players had great teams during their dynasty periods. However, Jordan has 6 Finals MVP's. Mr.Bryant has none. He has half the amount of rings, and although being a terrific player. And all these PPG dumbasses should know his highest average was 35.4. Jordan was 37.1. So don't use that as an argument. He also averaged more than 6 boards, 5 assists (lol not a team player you say) and 2.3 steals a game. Bryant is 25 PPG, 5.3 Rebounds, 4.6 Assists and 1.53. The only players who have a chance of Michael Jordan-like status are Chris Paul and LeBron James. Kobe is too old to start winning MVPs. At least it's a better argument than saying Crosby's the next Gretzky *facepalm*. His Airness reigns supreme yet again, Kobefags.

Paul does not play as good D as Kobe

Paul cannot score as easily as Kobe

Paul is the better facilitator than Kobe

Paul is damn good but the system he's in, his size and whatnot require different things than Kobe and so forth.

MJ is superior due to his mental ability. Physically all these guys are superior but Jordan is like a fucking tactician

Pound for pound Kobe is the closest you'll ever get to Jordan. And no Lebron is not Jordan. They don't even have the same physical characteristics.

I am 23 so I saw both of them. If one of your points is growing up with Kobe, you're a underage fag that needs to gtfo.
