fouls ruin the NBA for me

they slow the game down, encourage bad acting, and most of the time seem arbitrary

without fouls players would just push and punch each other

Yeah, I see no proble with this.

i completely agree. the nba is killing itself. here's how i would change it:

shooting foul: 1 free throw, and team retains possession
non-shooting foul: free pass at the spot of the foul (like soccer)
flagrant foul: auto kick out w/ league option for suspension
technical foul: same as shooting foul

Not the player's fault. Officiating bullshit. Look at the early 80's. Dude goes into the paint, gets slapped in the face, elbowed in the ribs and blatantly hit in the shoulder, goes up to layup, wrist-slapped, kicked.... NO WHISTLE. No one says shit. life goes on.

Fast-forward to 2008. Boozer grazes Kobe's shoulder a little.. *WHISTLE*! +free throws when no shot was attempted.

Should play like kids do, no harm no foul.

If you need to limp off the court, you get two free throws. Otherwise play the effin' game.

To be fair, the NBA would get an even worse reputation of being a "thug's league" and euros like Dirk would never come here for fear of getting killed in the paint.

That would certainly get rid of the pansy's. If we're gonna' play niggerball, we're going to at least DO IT RIGHT!

op is correct

even in the 90s, if you drove down the middle, guess what? you had to earn your basket.

now, 3pt plays are so fucking frequent b/c of ticky tack fouls

To reduce fouls, get rid of the block/charge call. That's not basketball; that's taking advantage of an arbitrary semicircle by standing still. And it results in A LOT of injuries to star players who attack the basket. Sure, there were hard fouls in the 80's and 90's, but they were plays on the ball and in close quarters where serious injury was not a threat.

The league changed the handcheck rules to encourage more drives to the basket and create more entertaining basketball. But, instead of finishing, players are now running full speed into other players, getting fouled (or offensive fouls that take them out of the game), shooting freethrows, and possibly getting injured.

Also I agree with Jeff Van Gundy. The league should review tapes for suspected flops, and brand floppers with a scarlet F.

I also agree with Van gundy in not making a call at all if someone charges toward the basket and shoot or passes the ball, and collides with a player after the ball is out of their hands. Why on earth would they make a call like that when the player already got rid of the ball, it doesn't make sense.

I would just hate to see Lebron James get a devastating knee injury just because James Posey is sliding in front of him after Lebron passes. If you look back at injuries to star players in the past couple of years, you'll see that many of them were from the block/charge call. It reduces creativity, discourages shot-blocking (this is why the Collin's brothers are in the league; they're great at standing still and not jumping to challenge shots), and gets the best players into foul trouble. It's also hard for an offensive player to change direction once they've picked up the ball and decided on where to go.

To reduce fouls intentional fouls on players who would otherwise make a basket should be treated as technicals (2 freethrows + possession). It's a cop-out for defenders to send opposing players to the free-throw line just because they're about to make a basket; that's just not basketball. The offensive team made a good play, so shouldn't the defensive team have to make an equally good play to stop the basket? This rule might be hard to officiate, but the NBA really needs it to stop the Kurt Thomas's of the world from whacking guys every time they get into the lane.

uhh, because contact is still made? if contact didn't matter except for by/against the player with the ball, what would stop players from knocking down opponents to get freed up?

scenario: 2 on 2 fast break, cavs and celts. lebron passes the ball to a teammate and then proceeds to bowl over rajon rondo. rondo weighs 170 lbs. james weighs 250. rondo goes flying, james barely even slows down. now it's a 2-on-1.

yes, this is fair.

It's WAYYY worse in college too, first of all only 5 fouls. Plus "Star" refs flail around with their huge arm movements and play to the crowd way more. There's a difference in making an emphatic call to show you saw it and got it right, and playing to the crowd while drawing attention to yourself. God I hate those assholes. I'm far from a Duke or UNC fag, but that last year UConn won it all Shelden Williams' goofy looking ass couldn't even breathe on Okafor without getting called for a foul in that Final Four. God I hate refs, that whole matrix/terminator scenario would be TOTALLY worth it if we could just have perfect robot refs or all TV/computer/AI calls for a few years first...

yeah i'm from oregon so i could care less about kansas or memphis but when memphis' big center dude that they compare to ben wallace got fouled out, that was bull shit. i didn't even see a foul there and kansas shouldn't even have taken that foul not that they have a choice but i'd want to be able to say i beat the full powered memphis team. not some jobber center. i give props to that dude who hit the 3, kansas deserved it but seeing as how that's the only time i bothered to watch college basketball, i was pretty much like i'll just stick to watching one organization of floppers instead of 2

Nope. You hate him cause you don't like when your team loses because of him.
