Epic, huh!

Oh wow, Shoppach got recognition.

who the fuck judges catchers on runs alone?

The Dodgers were disappointed by the regression of catcher Russell Martin, who in the words of one Dodgers-connected person was "just another catcher'' this year. Only a year ago Martin was an excellent two-way player who won a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger and appeared on the verge of superstardom. The New York Post reported that the Dodgers might even consider trading him.

Its not "runs", # runs scored, its net "runs" based on some formula that takes into account offensive runs produced and defensive runs saved. The formula doesnt factor in how the catcher effects the pitching staff which should always priority number 1, but these stat guys are always right, what with all their numbers and equations and shit.
>> Cleveland Fag !AVztAjVxGg
>Shoppach

I'm starting to feel that we need to play him Catcher full time, and have Vmart 1B fulltime.
>> Kilgamayan !2BklmILFiE
Can't argue with much of this list, aside from Ryan Howard not being #1.

Good to see Shoppach and Suzuki getting their due.
>> Anonymous
>>436711
How many more runs do you think the best catcher at handling a pitching staff saves than an average catcher at handling his pitching staff?
>> Anonymous
>>436770
What do you base this on?
>> Anonymous
>>436770
So the best catcher at "handling a pitching staff" saves "enough" runs more than the average catcher does?

You didn't even bother answering his question.
>> Anonymous
>>436770
Large swings in pitcher fail due to loss of confidence. This can be especially important with a young staff, guys coming off injurys or up and down between call ups. A few frustration cookie ball HR's can throw off all the calculation in the world.

out of all of the top 10 catchers, Ryan Doumit is the only catcher considered poor defensively. The Pirates are odd, Doumit has a hard enough time staying healthy so the pirates put him behind plate and abuse his body even more. Doumit's a 2nd baseman playing catcher for some reason.
>> Anonymous
>>436783
Thats right enough. If you want a number how about 10-12?
>> Anonymous
>>436828
If you had evidence to support it, yes.
>> Kilgamayan !2BklmILFiE

Well, Freddy Sanchez is so great...

I thought Doumit was a right fielder. Did he really come up playing 2B?

Rating catchers solely on offensive statistics is idiotic. Just like any top 10 list of catchers that doesn't include Yadi Molina.

Defense is taken into consideration.

Voicing your opinion without first making sure you even know what you're talking about is even more idiotic.

Yankees were without the #1 catcher in baseball for the entire season.
>> Anonymous
>>437125

I wouldn't be surprised. I want to see the rankings of shortstops in the AL east, or NL west. Its not going to be pretty. Pretty much all the NL west starting shortstops were either injured and missed a big amount of time like Tulo or Furcal, or they just sucked like Visquel and Greene.

>Pierzynski holds the AL record for consecutive errorless chances with 962

I think that speaks for itself

Posada should be in the top 5, this list is crap.
>> Anonymous
>>437143

>>Jose Molina should be in the top 5, this list is crap.

Pierzynski isn't good at run prevention.

For one thing, runners stole on him 96 times to 21 caught stealing.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/pierza.01.shtml

Compared to Mauer where runners only stole against Mauer 51 times and were caught stealing 29.

Its the implication of the arms that both A.J., and Mauer has.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/mauerjo01.shtml
>> Anonymous
>>437155
I'm not tryin to say he's better then maurer I'm just sayin that there's not 20 starting catchers better then him
>> Anonymous
>>437166

A.J. is not top ten though. At best, he's top 15. Also, why is he batting 2nd in the White Sox lineup? That seems odd. He doesn't get on base, and he doesn't run.

that shit is mega fail right there. The Dodgers front office should be embarrassed

Posada played in what, 60 games this year? These are the top catchers for 2008, fuckwad.

Kelly Shoppach number 5? Those statheads are nuts, they always overemphasize small sample size. He is terrible. 133 Ks in 112 games and pitchers don't even pay attention/know how to pitch to him. He is NOT the fifth best catcher in baseball, sorry.
>> Anonymous
>>437466
I can't wait to see your evidence.

Also: small sample size is relevant with rate stats, not counting stats. Strong fail on your part.
>> Anonymous
Soto's the best catcher in the NL. If he could strike out less, there'd be no contest.
>> Anonymous
sample size is both relevant to rate and counting. For proof I give you Phil Plantier's 91 "season" and Doug Mirabelli's career (which he hits homers at a rate comparable to Hank Aaron)
>> Anonymous
>>437505
At a rate. He didn't reach the same total, did he?

No sir, he did not.
>> Anonymous
>>437502
lol @ treating strikeouts differently

Navarro was arguably (by defensive statistics) the best defensive catcher in the AL, and hovered around .300 all year BA-wise. He was rightfully an All-Star, and I'd argue that his advancement in pitch-calling is the reason the Rays are in the World Series right now.

...oh yeah, he's only 24. Average Major league debut age for catchers is 25.
