So did last year's Patriots, 18-1 remains one of the most epic fails in sports history. Crosby failed where it mattered most, and for that he can go suck a dick.

well, the patriots were on the precipice of claiming the title "greatest single season football team of all time" and they failed to beat a 10-6 wildcard team.
whereas the penguins lost to the best team in the nhl in 2007. did they fail to achieve their ultimate goal? yes. was it "epic"? no.
also, calling crosby "epic fail guy" even though he has an mvp under his belt and a conference title is just stupid.
tl;dr-did crosby and the pens fail? yes. was it an "epic fail" like brady and the pats? not by a long shot.

Yeah, Tom Brady sure didn't have those.

You can't say that the Patriots had a 'more epic' season than the Penguins because an 82-0 hockey season is absolutely impossible. Even then, that season the Penguins were undefeated at home from (I believe) January until the finals. Add in the fact that unlike the NFL a seven-game series is used to weed out single-game flukes from the genuinely better team winning AND that it took three games into the Finals for the Penguins to even score, and there's no doubt in my mind that the Penguins ultimately failed epically. Their numbers aren't as 'catchy' as 18-1 is, but the failure was comparable.
