When Mussina was doing his contract extension with the Yankees, Cashman went to Mussina and offered $9 million a year. Mussina said he had to be paid more than Carl Pavano, and it wasn't about the money. Mussina had to show that he was a better pitcher than Pavano's weak ass, and Cashman understood, so he bumped up Mussina per year numbers to $11.5 million. Just enough to be paid more than Pavano.
