Boise or ACC champ

which least deserves the bcs?

Boise doesn't deserve to be mentioned with the BCS. It's impressive that they have a perfect record, but it's not like they beat anyone. Their only claim to fame this season is a win over Oregon State at the beginning of the season. And while Oregon State did recently upset USC they were playing like shit at the beginning of the season.

One of the problems that schools like Boise State or Fresno State have is that almost none of the "big" programs want to play them. Ask Fresno State how persistent they had to be and how long they had to wait to get to play USC, and they didn't even get a home-and-home.

Almost all of the big-name schools would rather cut a big paycheck to a cupcake than play an up-and-comer that might beat them.

True, no one wants to play these teams Fresno finally got a shot against a soon to be big 12 champ that year in kansas state and thrashed them. Same thing with Utah when they made it to a BCS bowl, no one considers them, but they can play and will prove it.

Every time you see a pushover on (say) Oklahoma's schedule, remember that schools like Utah, Fresno State, or Boise State were pounding on their doors, pleading "we'll come there and play and you can keep ALL the money, we don't care, just schedule us."

And Oklahoma just said, "ha ha, no thanks, we'll just pay Middle Tennessee State $200,000 to come here and get blown out."

That's because one loss for a big-time school from a big-time conference can mean the difference between a multi-million dollar BCS bowl payout, or accepting less than $500k froma lesser bowl. Whenever you have a question about why college football does strange things, just follow the money.

Why exactly is Oklahoma used as an example?

UAB was supposed to be a hell of a lot better than they are, and Mid Tenn State was the fourth game added to complete their schedule. At least they scheduled a 1-A school for their fourth non-conference game, which is more than can be said for most other teams.

Because you answered your own question? It's not like MTS was some random selection, or that OK didn't pay MTS to stop on by. OK wanted a cupcake, and MTS fit the bill. I certainly didn't criticize UAB being on the schedule.

Yes, at least OK picked a 1A school, unlike Wisconsin that barely beat a 1AA school. And conference mates Nebraska and Texas (among others) are guilty of cupcake harvesting on an annual basis as well.

But my whole point was that you can't blame Boise State for not having any powerhouses on their schedule, because they asked, and the powerhouses said No Thanks.

Mid Tenn State wasn't supposed to be anything, but they've turned out to be a pretty good team, with a shot to finish 10-3.

They're no Boise State or Utah, but they are still a pretty good team.

However, I do agree about the stronger small programs not getting a chance. If Boise State, TCU, or Utah were in power conferences, they would probably finish with very respectable records on an annual basis.

The same power conference fans who deride these teams at every turn usually don't want their teams to play them.

Texas plays Texas only schools at the beginning of the year.

Nebraska did play Lafayette and LA Tech which are cupcake schools, Troy has been pushing to be a contender, they are not a bad school, and USC is definitely not a bad school.

I don't even blame the big-timers (a lot) for dodging the up-and-comers, because the big-timers have more to lose than to gain, both in prestige and money. It's estimated that Utah crashing the party in '04 cost the BCS conferences ~$15 million apiece.

It's just that the world of college football is extremely tilted toward the BCS conferences. So if a non-BCS school can meet the (very tough) requirements for playing in a BCS bowl, real football fans should accept the fact, and let the kids go out there and play without griping about whether they deserve it or not.

I'm not trying to validate my team scheduling troy, but we have played them every year since they started comnig into 1-A so in a way nebraska with all their money has givin troy that chance to contend, plus we usck them on missouri that one year, you think that was chance?
