I know it's a VERY long shot buuutttt...
Have any of you ever actually RAN in a marathon?
I joined my school's XC and Track team just for the sake of playing sports and having something to do, and getting in shape. One year in, I love running. I even love watching running, I can watch a whole marathon and not get bored, I think it is awesome.
I'm <18 so I can't participate myself, and even if I was, I sure as hell wouldn't even try it because there's no way I'd be able to last more than 10 miles.
Within the next few years though, I'm going to get more and more serious, and one of my biggest goals is to compete in a marathon - it's one of the ultimate tests of fitness and to complete it is an epic feat.

So - has anyone ever done it? What's it like? How did you train for it? How'd you do?

I thought about it,

But I'm Jamaican. I don't want to make everyone look bad.

Jamaicans can't run long-distance worth a shit. That's what the Ethiopians and Kenyans are for

Oh, what's that?

I couldn't hear you because the race already started and I'm oh so far away.

and then you tire out after a quarter-mile, then everyone else catches up, and then you could hear us again saying "Jamaicans can't run long-distance worth a shit. That's what the Ethiopians and Kenyans are for."

Oh, that's better. I can hear you now.

Because in the 4 minutes it took for you to reply, I have circumnavigated the Earth.

We just jumped into it, we ended up walking most of the way though.

I guess you would want to make sure you eat a bit so if you throw up during the race you actually have something to throw up, I seen a few guys dry heaving and I wouldn't have wanted to be them. Also, get acquainted to BO, my god the BO. You'd think people have never heard of roll on deodorant.

Yeah, I've ran two.

For the first, I was in cross country, and I was only 16. So that really isn't a reason to not do it. I only had about a month or so after cross country to train for it. Went from about 5-6 miles being long to about 12 before the race. Just had to gut it out.

For the second, I just got bored my freshman year of college and wanted to get in shape. Signed up, went from completely out of shape to the marathon in two months. The training basically fucked me up. Got sick trying to run 17 miles for training. My system was so fucking weak because of the training it took me two weeks to get over the cold/flu. Had to run it mildly sick but I finished. Thinking about running another one at some point.

Time for the first was 4:45 and second I was hoping to go around 4:00 but the sickness fucked me up. Think it was about 4:50.

I saw this watching the 2004 games, watching a video of it is horrible, and looking at the picture is too, you can just see the pain on his face and that cost him his gold medal, which he probably would have won. Imagine how painful that must have been, that guy needs to be locked up.

So why did I lol?

Any advice on your training? I am college atm but I am taking the fall semester to get my shit straightened out (financially mostly). However, I want to return in the spring in at least decent running shape to sign up for a club or two.

Running a marathon is like one of the worst things you can do to your body. (serious)

Why? The people who run it seem pretty fit to me...

Many marathon runners do suffer from heart problems especially moments after the race. Sometimes long-term heart problems do develop. Your heart isn't built to handle a 20+ mile run.

As a matter of fact, "marathon" comes from an account of "The Battle Of Marathon" where a messenger kills himself running to Athens.

As you can probably tell, he wasn't Jamaican.

I kept to a pretty simple method.
Monday - Long Day, do whatever is long for you at the moment. Next week do one mile more.
Tuesday - Break. Light Jog for 3-4 miles. The miles aren't really important, you do not want a workout for this day, just something light.
Wednesday - Sprints. Find a track, sprint for 3/4 of a mile as fast as you can go. Walk 1/2 a mile. Repeat. I started with 3 sets, worked my way up to 6 or so. If you need to lower the mileage, no big deal, you just have to run as fast as possible each time.
Thursday - Another break day.
Friday - Hill day. Find a good hill, maybe a 1/8 a mile in length or so. Steeper the better. Sprint up, walk down. Take a 15 second break or so to grab water and repeat. Do 3-4 times, build up to 8-9.
Saturday - Another break day.
Sunday - Don't run.

This is what I did, but the eventual goal is to get to about 40+ miles per week. The above works out to 38 miles or so after you work up to a twenty mile long run. You really don't want to run any more then 20 miles in training in one go, at least, as far as I know. Add a bit more do the days thoughout or run Sunday if you're concerned about your heart. You want to get over 45 miles/week.

To answer the health concerns, a marathon is tough on your heart since it is a lot of stress. With the proper training though, it doesn't really have an adverse affect though, well, at least not enough to cancel out all the good things being in shape cause. Studies show if you run lower than 40 miles/week prior to the race, you can cause some damage. Over 45, there is practically no adverse affect. Don't let health concerns stop you from getting in shape, that is just fucking stupid.

Additionally, I did absolutely no weight training but it really does help a bit if you have the time. I'm doing a lot of free weights at the moment, but I really couldn't give any lifting advice for running. I'd imagine it would be a great deal different then what I'm currently doing.

No problem bud.
Good luck with your training, the actual race is pretty painful/nasty for the last 6 miles or so, but it is a wonderful feeling a week or so later.
