HOORAY FOR PUCKY
>> Anonymous
Seriously.

This is the dumbest, most fucking retarded forced meme in the history of /sp/. This is even worse than /cle/ or THAT. BIRD.

Why must you fuckers be so sentimental of a defunct pro hockey organization? When they were around, literally nobody gave a shit about them. Yet, you fucking keep reposting Youtube links to Brass Bonanza and pictures of that stupid fucking whale.

The Whale is dead. Get the fuck over it.

Heaven forfend people are passionate about a team that went to a place where nobody cares about hockey, but I guess we can all talk about things that matter, like basketba-...oh wait.

Moving the Whalers was the biggest mistake the NHL ever made

Rename the Hartford Wolfpack the whalers, keep playing Brass Bonanza, everyone's happy

Gordie Howe
Chris Pronger
Kevin Dineen
Brendan Shanahan
Sean Burke
Ron Francis
Paul Coffey
Dave Keon
Pat Verbeek

Many a great hockey player have worn the Whalers jersey proudly

Why, despite its wealth Hartford is a small city. There's no way it could afford an arena big enough to sell enough tickets to pay salaries.

The Canes have done better than the whalers ever had, and they are making tons of money. Just because they are in the south doesn't mean they can't enjoy the game.

Nice list....they were all awesome players in their time

However, of all the players mentioned, only Burke and Dineen did not win the Stanley Cup

To make things clearer, none of them won a Cup with Hartford, as Hartford never made it past the first round of the playoffs. Here's a list of the teams the players won a Cup with...

Gordie Howe (Detroit)
Chris Pronger (Anaheim)
Brendan Shanahan (Detroit)
Ron Francis (Pittsburgh)
Paul Coffey (Edmonton, Pittsburgh)
Dave Keon (Toronto)
Pat Verbeek (Dallas)

However, the Huskies and the Wolfpack enjoy sellouts and do quite well for themselves financially...

Based on this success, what's to imply that Hartford can't host another pro team?

That's college basketball and minor league hockey, which means cheaper tickets. That's a different level of attendance right there.

You must understand that defunct franchises are manna as far as /sp/ is concerned.

As franchises with literally no fans, the sheep of /sp/, who judge identity based on external crowd, cannot be embarrassed or find fault with the Whalers.

As franchises who no longer lose games or actively fail in any way, the bitter trolls of /sp/ have nothing to hate.

As franchises who no longer win games or achieve any kind of success whatsoever, the jealous fans of /sp/ have nothing to envy.

Take away any and all negative properties, along with any signs of life, and the Internet Hate Machine is left with only a pleasant sense of nostalgia. Any remaining desire to hate on the topic of the Whalers is fulfilled by blaming NHL or other agencies for the Whale's demise.

By being nothing and doing nothing, the Hartford Whalers exist only in /sp/'s imagination, the only place the basement-dwellers who post here like to go.

That's very good and very true...but not completely in every case (for one, I live in an above-ground apartment lol). Since what you wrote was so good, let me give you an explanation from one of /sp/'s Whalerfags (but not the original or even OP of this thread).

I was born in a bumfuck state and we moved around to even more bumfuck states until my father was transferred to Hartford. This was the first place we lived that had any pro sports team. So, even though I didn't know much about hockey at the time, I latched on. Even more, I paid my dues getting harassed by Bruins, Rangers, and Islanders fans, occasionally getting beat up for wearing Pucky until I finally pulled a Ralphie (from "A Christmas Story") and went off on one of them.

We moved away a couple of years later but I always kept the Whalers #1 in my heart. Since they moved, I just can't jump on another bandwagon. I tried four different teams, but my heart wasn't in it. These days, I'd usually rather watch college hockey than the NHL.

So, many months ago, when some other Anon first posted "Brass Bonanza is now playing in your head," I laughed my ass off and felt honest joy that somebody shared my gay for the Whale. So...yeah, I miss 'em, but I also know that it wasn't solely an evil owner or league that caused their demise.

As for /sp/, I can only speak for myself in that the continued posting of the Whalers is fun and funny, both for we former fans on a personal level plus that it is starting to piss some people off almost as much as a NASCAR thread.

Well, I guess that's it. What I had to say wasn't as good as what you wrote, but it will stand as a one-time-only explanation/example that Whale-love is not always just somebody's cop-out.

tl;dr Pucky4evah!!!!!

Had I actually paid attention to sports when I was a wee one, I guarantee I'd have been a Whalers fan instead of a Bruins fan. I'm sandwiched between Boston and Hartford. Worcester gets no love.
