The gymnast scoring system confuses me.

Every routine gets a start value.

Plus ten.

Minus deductions.

Why even add ten? You'd get the exact same results if you simply deducted points from their starting score.

unless you are chinese
then it is plus 11.5

The new scoring system was put in place to prevent perfect scores.
>> Black ? Star !x8ngkAZjXE
seems like the introduced the system just so people wouldn't complain about how they score the chinese.

Horrible system I can't see it being there next games.

Because 10 can't mean "As good as one can do", it HAS to mean perfect.

Apparently when you decide what the score means, unless it's 10 then it means literally perfect.

1) difficultly of routine decided beforehand
2) execution of said routine

They usually deduct from execution unless for some reason a move was dropped during performance.

I haven't seen over a 9.7, I bet if they computer animated a textbook move, they would still be able to pick and nag at it.

I think his point is that if you simply took the execution deductions from the start value, there would be no need for a separate execution value

butthurt
>> Anonymous
>>266700
7.92

If they did that all the athletes would pick routines with insanely high starting values and constantly fuck up because they're too hard. This way rewards perfection.

wut?
that doesn't make sense

>>266722

What he's saying is... why would any gymnast do a routine with a starting value of, say, 6.00 when they could do a fucking crazy routine with a 7.00 and just fuck up and take a huge deduction? They'd still get a higher score than the 6.00.

WOULD NOT HAVE MEDALED UNDER THE NEW SYSTEM

lolz

...That's exactly how it works right now.

That's why people who are falling or hopping are outscoring people who stick landings.

Adding the ten to every score changes nothing.

that was beautiful

>>266749
how is that different from now?
as it stands if you start with a 7 start value and get a 1 point execution deduction you get 16 and if you start with a 6 and do it perfectly you also get a 16

how would that differ if we just didn't add 10?
>> Anonymous
>>266749
well, that is part of it, but...

because it's a .3 for a fucking step

the difference between a 6 and 7 is huge
>> Anonymous
>>266659
They put it in because it's IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to be perfect. I wish you guys would stop blaming China for everything and expend some brain power already. The system is a lot clearer than the old "I feel like giving that dude a 10" one.

>>266784
lol no it isn't
>> Anonymous
>>266768

Ok it rewards difficulty too lol Romania
I think this way just makes it less complicated for the judges lol

They changed the scoring cause the Japs BAWWWW'd over Hamm beating them in the all around.

"Nor one can outpelformu us! We plotest!"

He didn't deserve to win because it was a mistake on the Judges part.

Yes it is. Take it this way- you and some other guy are handing in an assignment. He just pulls basic information from Wikipedia and the Encyclopedia Britannica and finishes his project easily, while you do in depth research, conduct interviews etc. However, while rushing to hand in your project on time there are a few printing errors and typos that you're unable to fix. Who's going to get a better mark- you or wikipedia guy?

Are we really going to have this debate again?
.999999 = 1

He did better than anyone else. I watched the games, and even the announcers, 2 of whom are former gymnasts, said he was the best. And before you say "American announcers are bias" let me remind you that they congratulate all the nations. Tim was cheering for Romania when they fucked out shit up in Athens.

lol wut?
I'm curious about how you made that analogous in your head

As NBC's gymnastics commentator Tim Daggett--who reviewed the tape of Tae-Young's parallel bar routine--showed, Tae-Young made four holds on his parallel routine as opposed to the maximum allowed: three. For this mistake, Yang Tae-Young should have received a mandatory 0.2 deduction. So even with the adjustment for the 0.1 added to his starting score, Paul Hamm would still remain the Olympic Gold medalist. Yang Tae-Young does not deserve the gold medal, Paul Hamm does.

That's right. It was the Eat cats, not the Japs.
BAWWWWW. That made me rage.

Why, whenever I scroll past that picture, do I think it is Bronson Pinchot
>> Anonymous
>>266640

Actually, that makes sense. My only guess is that scores in the 14 - 17 range look nicer than scores in the 4 - 7 range.
>> Anonymous
>>266833
This. It's Yang didn't deserve the bronze medal.

But any logical arguments about this would be shot down. Plus it was unfair for Paul because he can't redo his routine to counter that.

Gook needed to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up. That's why he's was eight place this time around.
>> Anonymous
Actually im pretty sure it was because he fell off the fucking pommel horse

You need the 10! Because otherwise, if a gymnast picks a 5 difficulty routine, and starts masturbating furiously on the mat instead of doing his routine, he would end up in negative scores (by rightfully deducting 9 points for such a lascivious act) So, with a 10 point execution factor and a 5 difficulty rating, this guy ends up with a score of 6 instead of -4. And thats a golf score. We know golf will never become an olympic sport.
