>A group that tracks every ball hit in the majors says Derek Jeter is the worst fielder in baseball. Stats guru Bill James, author of the "Baseball Abstract," and a panel of nine other voters, ranked Jeter 22nd among all major-league shortstops, with one calling Jeter "the least effective defensive player in the major leagues, at any position." Jeter received one 10th-place vote in balloting for the 2008 Fielding Bible Awards, announced yesterday. One panel member comes from Baseball Info Solutions (BIS), a group that ... well, just say they do their research. "They watched film of every major-league game, and had recorded every ball off the bat by the direction in which it was hit [the vector], the type of hit [groundball, flyball, line-drive, popup, etc.] and by how hard the ball was hit [softly hit, medium, hard hit]," according to James.

not really surprised...he's like zoolander out there--he can't go left at all. also, a vacuous fashion plate of a homosexual, but that's irrelevant

more lulz for jeter being called out though

Jeter is only the worst fielder in baseball by these standards because he has so many more opportunities via being an every day player. I'm sure there are bench players that would fare worse than him if they were out at short every day for the whole year.

Jeter being the worst defensive *starter* in the majors, however? That I can get behind.

Maybe he's just as bad as they say he is. Which I believe.

A-Rod should have played SS for the Yankees, and move Jeter to Second.

Still the best shortstop in the league.

Jeter is top-5 in fielding percentage but ITT some crackpots create a convoluted system that shows otherwise.

Does that pretty much sum it up?

Fielding percentage is meaningless. If your range is so bad you only field balls hit directly to you, you'll have a great fielding average.

The best fielders will have more errors than the worst fielders because they have more opportunities. They get to more balls than the bad fielders, meaning balls that would be hits for bad fielders are errors for the good ones.

It astonishes me people can't understand this simple fact.

Except that fielders aren't punished with errors on balls they get to that would otherwise be hits.

It astonishes me that people don't understand this.

It's possible he is indeed just that bad, but I'm not sure I'm ready to set it in stone.

I would rather have a +/- of -15 over 162 games at short starting over a +/- of -5 over 30 games at short, for example.

Jeter is the main reason the Yankees are in this failslump

His range isn't THAT bad. Granted, he's getting up there in age and has definitely lost a step or 2, but this is greatly exaggerated.
