FENWAY IS A HORRIBLE PLACE TO PLAY.

Really? Bay is worse than Manny defensively?

Genuinely curious, didn't get to see either play.

8. Jason Bay (51 off, -33 def, 32 tot) -- No, that defensive rating is not a typo. He was -11 runs with the Pirates and -15 runs with the Red Sox. I'm guessing there are still issues with Fenway (one reason Dewan's +/- is better than the regular BIS zone rating), but given Bay's track record of league-average defense, that Pirates number also seems really low, especially for only four months. Notice that his overall rating is higher than the sum of his offense plus defense -- that's because Justin's stats cap the defensive penalty on the low end at whatever a full-time DH would deserve, for better or worse.

I would argue no, Bay is better. THIS YEAR, though, they were, IMO, about the same.

However, if you actually read the link, you'll see that there's a "floor" for players in the AL, essentially their defense can only reach a certain level of bad before the original methodologist decides to not penalize them for their manager not putting them at DH.

Essentially, Manny was even worse than his defense in the AL shows, and Bay doesn't get the same advantage because of more time spent in the NL. Neither I nor the OP agrees with this, but it's where the numbers come from and it gives Manny an advantage.

Then, of course, Bay was just learning Fenway, I think that makes a little difference.
