Boras, according to a rival executive, is trying to sell catcher Jason Varitek to the Tigers as a replacement for another of his clients, Ivan Rodriguez. The idea is not without merit; the Tigers' lineup is strong enough to carry Varitek's declining offense, and his defense and leadership would greatly benefit their pitching staff.

Scott Boras. Trying to screw over Detroit. AGAIN.

It's not that bad; he'd be a useful bridge to whoever their catcher-of-the-future is.

That being said, Boras will inevitably try to get Detroit to pay too much. The Varitek of 2009 will not be as good as the Variteks of 2004 and 2007.

It's an awful idea for anyone but the Red Sox to resign Varitek, unless they'd just use him to get the skinny on Sox pitchers.

And Lowell doesn't need to be traded. The Sox might be forgetting what happened one year ago (hundreds of Red Sox fans behind the Sox dugout in Colorado, chanting "Resign Lowell!" Don't focus on improving a fundamentally sound team. As long as they keep Kotsay or Casey, they can put Youkilis at third and only take a small offensive cut.

Just clone Inge already.

Except that 1) that's poor logic for building a team and 2) Varitek's offense (for a cather [yes, I'm serious]) is the only reason to want him.

No, that's after positional adjustment.

The positional adjustment is for fielding. Actually, Veritek's offensive is only replacement level. Not league average.

"To help you put the Total Value number in perspective, here are some benchmarks given a full season of playing time:

* League-average is about 20 runs above replacement.
* The cut-off for true All-Stars is in the 40 run range.
* Top 5 MVP candidates are worth at least 70 runs above replacement.
* MVP winners have been in the 90-100 run range the past few years."

I Rod is basically the Hispanic Vertiek so this is fail.

I also notice a distinct lack of 18-1, so, 18-1.

Veritek will actually call for breaking balls. But then, Veritek can't catch knuckleballers for some reason.

Thankfully the Tigers don't have Tim Wakefield on their pitching staff.

Though, they do have Dontrelle Willis, so Varitek'll have to catch some wild ones either way.
