If the decathalon winner is such a master of all these events why do they not participate in the long jump or 400 metres?
I'm not saying they aren't great athletes, I'm just saying that becoming Phelps requires all attention on one event although he still works just as hard as the gold medal winner in the decathlon.
Last Olympics, the gold medalist (Roman Sebrle) only succeed in the decathlon. He was a fantastic all-round athlete but he simply wasn't a master of any specific event. He couldn't beat Gaitlin in the 100 metres, he couldn't beat Ralph Boston in long jump but neither of those two athletes could beat Roman in... say... discus.
