The IAAF has provisionally suspended seven athletes* from Russia for doping offences, a decision which has been acknowledged by the All Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF)

One of the bigger names is Yelena Soboleva. She established a new world indoor record of 3:58.05s this year. Also has the 3rd fastest outdoor 1500m in history, and has the current world leading as well as the current Russian record in the 800m, 1:54.85s.

Doping in international competition. What else is new?
>> Anonymous
Well, not doping entirely. But tampering with the doping control process during testing.

""The athletes have been charged under IAAF Rules 32.2 (b) and 32.2 (e) for a fraudulent substitution of urine which is both a prohibited method and also a form of tampering with the doping control process. These rule violations were established following the deliberate storage of samples by the IAAF and re-analysis using comparative DNA techniques, and were the result of a specific investigation which was instigated and carried out by the IAAF for more than a year""

Are we talking like switched cups tampering, or Onterrio Smith tampering?

From what I understand it's more like Onterrio Smith type tampering. They retested the urine sample and found out that it doesn't belong to her.

All the athletes that got temporarily suspended so far.

Svetlana CHERKASOVA – 800m
Yulia FOMENKO – 1500m
Gulfiya KHANAFEYEVA – Hammer Throw
Darya PISHCHALNIKOVA - Discus Throw
Yelena SOBOLEVA – 800m / 1500m
Tatyana TOMASHOVA – 1500m
Olga YEGOROVA - 1500m / 5000m

With the banning of Yelena Soboleva, it pretty much means that Pamela Jelimo's gonna have a straight run to the gold.

be a little more specific?

the only high profile case i can remember was Marion Jones fucking over her entire 4x100 team by doping. 2004 Athens was Justin Gatlin... but i dont recall whether he was stripped of the medal or not.

Six medals, four of them gold, were stripped from the US team in the 2000 Olympics within the past 8 months.

The men's 4x400 gold medal was also taken away due to Antonio Pettigrew's doping violation. Michael Johnson and twins Alvin and Calvin Harrison ran in the final, while Jerome Young and Angelo Taylor featured in the preliminaries. Three of the four runners from the relay final have been tainted by drugs (obviously not Johnson, but he gave back his medal saying he felt cheated).

Five medals from Marion Jones were given back as well.
