Australia bids for 2018 World Cup Anonymous
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Australia's bid for soccer's 2018 World Cup is official.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Sunday that the government will back the bid and that Ben Buckley, chief executive officer of Football Federation Australia, will head the team.

"Winning the rights to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup is a Herculean task, but overcoming tough odds is what Australian football does best," Rudd said.

The 2018 host will be selected at an executive committee meeting in 2011 with up to 10 countries interested, including the United States, Russia, Spain-Portugal, England and a joint bid between the Netherlands and Belgium, which has already been accepted by FIFA.

Rudd said the team would meet within a week to begin planning the bid, the cost of which would be shared between federal and state governments.

A meeting of the FIFA executive committee is scheduled for Sydney in late May.

we got into the last worldcup, won 1 game from 4 and all the soccer fags in aus thought it was the greatest thing ever.

We have always had one of the easiest paths into the world cup but failed at getting in cause we suck. Soccer australia had a big cry when we got beaten by uruguay and iran in previous qualifiers....somehow having to beat one decent team (in uruguay's case a low ranking south american team) was too hard so they cried and FIFA made it even easier for us to get in.

Japan and korea had to share the world cup, population of those countries is like 9000 times that of australia, and intrest in the sport is also higher in those countries. Why take the world cup to a country with so few soccer fans most australians really dont give a fuck about it.

USA ran the best World Cup ever, highest attendence, etc.
I wouldn't mind it gonig back to England. And I also wouldn't mind the Low Countries bid.
Everythnig else kinda sucks. I am surprised that Morroco hasn't put in a bid because they've put in a bid for the last 20+ years and always failed.
