Hey guys, I am a northern American who has no interest in Nascar whatsoever. I just can't watch automobiles race around the track 400 times.

That said, I do have a question. What is (if any) the skill required to for racing? I know a big race just happened yesterday and it seems that the time differences between when all the cars finish is so large that the skill of the driver would be very small. So does anyone know what's so great about race car driving?

Nascar is all about team work. The length of the race allows team mates to help each other out by doing things like providing slip streams.

In other car racing, you look to tactically beat you opponent (I'll use the same example for relevance) by using their slip stream as one example.

Motorsports require great skill, communication and patience.

OP here. Thanks for that. I didn't realize it was such a team effort.

If your driving skill loses two or three hundredths of a second per lap, you aren't good enough to race.

Every lap, you have to hit points on the track within six inches or you aren't good enough. And you have to do that a lot...entering a turn, in the middle of a turn, at the end of a turn, and at the midpoint of the straightaway, for four turns. And that's a minimum.

Plus, in NASCAR there's a lot more passing than in open wheel racing, and that's a whole other challenge.

Yah, communication is a big deal. You can't just tell your crew chief your car is a little loose, you have to say it's loose coming out of a turn but good in the middle of a turn.

Teamwork goes beyond the actual divers too. There is constant monitoring of the cars performance and health. When the car comes into the pits, in a very short period of time (we're talking 10seconds) they have tires changed, fueled up and on their way back to the track.

...tires changed in that backward-ass way the NASCAR still does it.

Those pit dudes are unreal. It takes me fifteen damn minutes to get my tires off of my car...

The smallest changes to your car could make or break you. too much air/not enough, too much wedge not enough, trackbar etc. People just say pfft 400 laps then criticize the sport without realizing it's far more technical than any other sport. You can still win pretty much any other sporting event with mistakes, but even the simplest thing could fuck you no matter how perfect you are the rest of the time.

don't forget the pits, you need your pits to go perfectly or you can lose a bunch of position. It cost Carl the race yesterday.

Also OP, you need to not fear the ever present risk of death, and be physically fit enough to endure hours in a literal oven of a car. Drivers lose xx pounds per race in sweat alone. It takes athleticism to race in NASCAR, 90% of the people who criticize it couldn't do it.
