The torchbearers were flanked by Australian police who flanked the torch bearers who at one stage repeatedly pushed aside blue-tracksuited Chinese officials running close to the flame.

The incident with the so-called Chinese flame attendants appeared to reflect confusion over their role in the torch's security.

However the problem later appeared to be resolved, with the Chinese officials keeping a short distance from the torchbearers, who remained easily visible to spectators.

Spectator James Taylor, 16, was surprised by the lack of Australians cheering the flame on.

"I think they were lazy and were watching it on TV," he said.

"It's like playing spot the Aussie here."

One Canberra local Linda Swinkels, who had come to watch the opening ceremony, was unsure of whether she would follow the flame because she was concerned about her safety in the crowds.

"I just want to get out of here, basically," she said
