The german and italian states gave up their autonomy in the 19th century to unite for a greater good and the same can happen on a larger scale as well. And joining up is far nicer than splitting up if you ask me. There are already too many too small states, that trend needs to be stopped. You won't see a fusion of all 27 EU members any time soon, but there will a close coorperation between the lands of the core.
