Britfag here. Decided to watch NFL for the first time and I saw the Minnesota vs New Orleans game. How does that rate in terms of excitement etc. for a typical NFL game? I didn't understand some of it but I liked it more than I thought I would.

Pic unrelated.

It was definitely an above average game.

Somewhat of a stunner, and returning punts for touchdowns is rare, much less twice in a game. Congratulations!

It wasn't really a "good" game in terms of fundamentals and discipline but it was exciting because there were a lot of turnovers and lots of scoring. Good football is usually played by two defensive teams with good running games.

Ouch.

Saints were 2-2, not 1-3. Minnesota has one good player on offense, and utter crap besides. Calling the Saints defense 'mediocre' is much too generous, while calling the incredible Vikings defense mediocre is a brazen insult.

Ah, yeah, I think I get it, exciting but not neccesarily because of high quality?

The match in american football I've enjoyed most was that Miami - Pittsburgh (or which it was last year) that ended 3-0, sports where it's too easy to score get boring, and take the joy out of the scoring.

big surprise - the eurofag likes the "blowout in soccer" score

Pretty much. The best game of the year is usually the matchup between the Colts and the Patriots but this year that looks pretty bad as the Patriots' QB is injured and the Colts are missing a bunch of key guys due to injury as well.

It's just that 1 point in american football isn't worth as much, or isn't as hard to get as in football. That's why I can't stand Basketball, and Handball too some extent. Hockey and Baseball can keep the scores down, and some american football matches (like the last superbowl)

Well the reason that football scores are so high is because the points come in bunches. Touchdowns are 6, field goals are 3, etc.

Do you like Rugby btw? I've seen some lopsided games where the winning team scores over 100.

Thats rare in Rugby, only the very best against much weaker sides will that happen.

I can't really say, they don't show Rugby regularly here, they showed the World Cup which I enjoyed pretty much, but one difference I see ther against american football is that (and compare all three), in football (soccer) you can lose the ball pretty easy, even if you lose it, you can easily get it back pretty fast as well, in rugby it a bit harder to get the ball from the other team, so you'll have to be a bit more careful with it, in american football it's really hard to get the ball from the other team, and therefore you have to be even more careful with it.
And I guess if let's say the rules in american football were if the ball is open, even after it has touched the field it was still a live ball you'd get more matches over 100 for a team.

pretty much yes, turnover ratio and third down conversions are two big reasons that will win you games.

in american football the better the team's defense is usually the one that wins. defense wins championships like last year's Giants squad.

glad to see you enjoyed yourself, i really like your football even though i'm still a noob in terms of history and all the clubs in Europe.
