I'd rather have somewhat fearsome names that are regionally-appropriate that really fearsome names that have nothing to do with my area.
Here in Tampa Bay, we have the Buccaneers (this is a legendary pirate cove, specifically for the supposed pirate Jose Gaspar) the Lightning (Tampa Bay has the most natural lightning strikes of any area in the US) the Rays (which, yes, now refers to both sun rays and the iconic kind that lurk our beaches and kill TV croc-wranglers) and the Storm (see Lightning)
We used to have the Mutiny, and now we have the Rowdies back, both of which go back to the pirate theme.
Also, if your collective team name is a singular noun, you lose the game immediately. And if your town has a WNBA team you lose immediately too (though I'm pretty sure all WNBA teams have singular noun team names)
