There's actually a lot to fishing that people who either fish casually or don't fish at all don't even realize.
Some of it is general knowledge, things like where to fish, what bait to use, what rod/reel combo to use, what line to use. Also, in the knowledge department is how to catch the fish. You need to reel in different fish in different ways. But this is also a skill. For example, a white crappie has a very thin mouth, so you have to be delicate so that they don't tear and you can get them close enough to net.
There is also an unbelievable amount of stamina necessary to do fish. You're out in a boat, in the hot sun all day, trying to outsmart a fish. Its very tiring. Then, you have to fight to reel the thin in for hours sometimes. When it comes to fighting, they can last anywhere from 15 minutes with a drum, to hours with a marlin or something.
So yes, fishing is a sport.
