>Twins beat the Sox in the seasonal matchups, and ended up with the same record.

LOL, HOLD ON, LETS FLIP A COIN TO DECIDE WHERE IT'S PLAYED!

>TWINS BEAT THE SOX IN SEASONAL MATCHUPS

Baseball's season is the worst structured of all the professional sports.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense to me either.

How come they can decide the divisions by seasonal head-to-head matchups, but not the wildcard?

wat

This isn't the wild card. This is the AL Central.

The rule is that if two teams tie for the division championship, and both teams have a better record than the second-place team in the other two divisions, the head-to-head record determines which team is division champion and which is the wild card.

That's why, if the Rays had tied the Red Sox, they would still be AL East champs because they went 10-8 against the Sox.

Essentially the Sox and Twins have to play because MLB doesn't want to leave a team out of the playoffs based on a tiebreaker technicality. After 162 games, what's another one?

Agreed, but the thing is, they're giving home field advantage based on a coin flip, not based on their head-to-head record throughout the season.

With the Red Sox/Rays thing, they're using their matchup records to determine who gets a more advantageous spot in the playoffs, but both teams get to the playoffs. I think the same should apply here - the Twins should get the home field advantage for this last tie-breaking game since they had a better record against the White Sox.

Good point. But MLB has never done things that make sense.

Inaccurate. Sox fan isn't skinny enough to depict meth addiction.

durr hurr homefield should be given to the winner of the season series. oh well, either would've been fodder for the rays, anyway
