http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minute_Maid_Park#Features

"In contrast to the ease of hitting a home run to the Crawford Boxes, it is quite difficult to hit a ball out in center field. Fielding is a challenge there as well, due to the 90-foot (27 m) wide, 30-degree incline grade, known as Tal's Hill, for team president Tal Smith, an element taken from Crosley Field and other historic ballparks (in a bit of gallows humor, the hill is also known as the "Grassy Knoll"), and the flagpole in play, an element taken from Yankee Stadium (before its remodeling in the mid-'70s) and Tiger Stadium among others. Milwaukee Brewers player Richie Sexson once hit a ball off the flagpole and there is still a mark there. The difference is that the Crosley Field "terrace", which was half as steep at 15-degrees, was necessitated by the difference in elevation between field level and street level, while Tal's Hill is purely decorative. Both structures have been held in equal disdain by the respective outfielders who have had to patrol those areas. This hill has caused some of the most replayed catches in recent baseball history, and plenty of controversy as well. Lance Berkman said, "If the ball rolls onto the hill, it's not steep enough to roll back, so you have to go get it. Then there's the chance of running into the flagpole that's on it and getting hurt.” Fans started an online petition to remove the hill and flagpole, though the petition has since been discontinued."

It seems to be a purely aesthetic choice, which makes it even more stupid.

I love baseball for that reason. You go to one NHL arena, you've seen them all. NFL? Same field.

In baseball? Green monsters, random hills placed in the outfield, ivy covering the outfield wall, bullpen warmups on the 3rd base line. Every field is unique.

I'm convinced Tropicana Field was constructed for the sole purpose of detracting fans.
It's a closed domed stadium in beautiful tropical Florida.
It should have a retractable roof.

Plus they built this stadium too far away from Tampa, nobody wants to drive all the way out there.
>> Anonymous
>>392226

They started building it in 1985, long before the first retractable roof stadium (SkyDome). And you can't have an open-air stadium because it rains every day in Tampa Bay from June-September.

That's why I love baseball.

Every field has some kind of thing that they can hold special, and it also makes being a home team much better. It makes you know those little quirks in your field, and you can use those to your advantage.

The hill in Houston is idiotic, but it's their thing. It makes some plays fun to watch.

The Polo Grounds is the sole reason that the Giants were able to make up a 13 game in August deficit and catch the Dodgers forcing a three game playoff, which eventually led to Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard Round the World off Ralph Branca on October 3rd, 1951. In order to help make up the deficit, the Giants installed a telescope in Center Field (If you look at the pic, there are windows from the Manager's office facing the field. A dutch immigrant relayed these signs to the bullpen (which was in play down the third base line) who would relay them to the manager, who would relay them to the third base coach, who would relay them to the batter, the entire process surprisingly taking only about 6 seconds.

The only reason there was a Shot Heard 'Round the World was due to cheating. Sorry NYGiantsfags.

Also many people still speculate to this day that Thomson was relayed the sign of "Slider" off the hand of Ralph Branca, but this is vehemently denied by the Giants organization.

I'm a bit of a baseball history buff, especially concerning the 1951 season.

>>395770Charger is the term for the horses that were bred for use by knights and is the origin of the name.

Technically a charger is any horse that carries a load; the more correct name for what you describe is destrier, from the latin for "right (strong) hand." Charger comes from latin carr, or "wagon."

Chargers were originally wagon horses. As time has passed, it has also become a second name for horses carrying the heavy knights of the late medieval period, who were indeed a wagon load themselves.
