Tyson's got two Jamaicans who could very well take gold and silver... and one of them is the current record holder. So gold might not be a guarantee for the 100m, and even the relay. It's a given that Jamaica will be contending with the US in the sprint events. I'm not sure of the rest of the events, as long distances are owned by Africans, and field events are owned by Europeans.

Meh. You don't understand it, do you?

I'm Chinese-American, an ABC, and I've dealt with the same pressure, but in a different arena. "Mama, Baba, do I really have to take Calculus? It's not required for me to graduate from high school." Do you think they said anything but "No,"?

And before you say that that's a different situation, sure, it is. But it's the same mentality. I don't think the West has yet to accept the idea that cultural norms differ. And I don't think they'll ever be ready to accept that theirs is not necessarily correct.

They were entranced by the idea of boarding schools, but we didn't have the money.) but it's a different societal idea of work and achievement. I'm not trying to say, "Boo hoo, my life sucks, my parents are mean." I love my parents, and I'm glad they raised me that way. (And maybe one day, that girl will be glad that's how her parents raised her.) But I think it's just a different way of thinking that Westerners don't understand. Not that it's right. from your post it seems like you've bought into a completely absurd stereotype of americans and how they have no restrictions.
You know what? I had a friend (not chinese) who was grounded in high school because his parents saw him j-walking. FUCKING J-WALKING

we understand what it's like to have parents that make you do things you don't want to for your own benefit. If there is any difference it's clearly in how eager you are to take a wholly ridiculous experience (like being forced to do something when you're 3) and relating it to being forced by your parents to take a math class (something we have all experienced).

you want to paint it like "omg we're so different, non chinese americans can never understand" but then you give an example that is laughable universal. If you can't see the difference between

>>242578
I understand the difference, I acknowledged the difference in my first post, and I made clear that I do not, under any circumstance, believe that being forced to take a math class, and being forced to live away from your parents since the age of 3 is the same thing.

Please, try to read my posts.

Hell, even *I* don't really understand this thinking, this thinking that the old-time Chinese have and shame us ABCs for not understanding. Because I'm Western. Because I was brought up in the West, lived Western ways, ate Western things, listened to Western music, and only speak a Western language.

But I also realize this difference. I can tell how difference my philosophy and outlook on life is different from my parents', due to the cultural upbringing. I don't claim to understand it, and I have a lot of problems with a lot of it. And, like I said, I'm not defending the action of taking away a little girl to live in a sports system.

But I am urging the West, and Americans in particular, to just sit back, and see that there are cultural norms in both places, and what might be acceptable there, is not here, and what is acceptable here, is not there.

That's all. I'm just saying people are different, so don't be so quick to criticize. That's it.

I'm not claiming to understand. I'm not claiming to be special. I'm not claiming that math class and gymnastics are the same thing. I'm sorry I did a bad job of using my anecdote to illustrate my point. I thought it would do a better job. But all I'm saying, once again, is that the cultures are different. So don't get so riled up so easily. Try to understand first, then criticize afterwards.

but you're wrong, we understand that as well as anybody. If we aren't eager to accept other kinds of coercion, it's not necessarily because I've never had my mom tell me I had to take a class I didn't want to. It's because I don't think that's the same thing

>> Anonymous
>>242640
Once again, I highly apologize if that is the impression I gave you, but it is not what I intended to say at all, and I believe you are sorely mistaken in my intent.

Please, please, I beg you, forget my first post. It was not written well, and I used that anecdote in bad judgement. That is not at all how I was trying to come off, I was trying to use a story from my own personal life to illustrate a pervasive thinking that the Chinese people have, failing to realize how petty it sounded, as if I were complaining about the incident, which is not my intention at all.

Once again, I apologize for coming off wrong. Obviously I was not able to transmit my ideas well, but, please, go back, read my other posts, and try to understand what I'm saying.

I'll even say it here: Cultural differences are the main force in play here. What is "right" in China is not necessarily "right" to Westerners, and vice versa. I'm not saying you *can't* understand, I'm saying people in general, although often I myself observe it as Westerners, fail to attempt to understand other cultures before criticizing them for what people of that culture do. I am just please asking you to try to understand first, and if you still find it wrong, that's fine.

Trust me, I would be saying the same thing if it were any other nation, I just thought that I could shed some light using my own background, but that obviously failed.

I mean, I wholly support one's choice to root for whoever, or do whatever they wish. But, still, that should always be tempered by who you are, which I feel racial identity is a big part of.

If a Black American, for instance, was instrumental in a US government plot to take down a big civil rights organization dedicated to bringing about more rights for Black Americans, (that's not too far-fetched by the way, look up some history if you don't believe me) I would probably call that man a "race traitor".

I've decided that henceforth you are the worst thing about this entire board. Your pointlessly contrary statements abusing a first generation ABC's perspective because you do not agree with the cultural concept he has pointed out?

In case you're not aware, the entire world isn't the West. If you think that Chinese families opting to give their children a better chance by whatever means necessary is somehow unacceptable then perhaps you'd like them to sell the child instead, because they can not provide a good life for it.

Seems to me that your idealistic ranting about how things should be and the wonders of individual freedom probably haven't stepped foot one out of a first world country, you've never seen the human condition in countries that have barely made it out of Jesus of Nazareth era technology.

Ultimately the individual freedom expressed here is the freedom of two parents to try and provide the best life for their child that they are able to do, your criticism of their decisions is irrelevant as I'm relatively sure you've hardly had to look after even yourself, I could be wrong but I doubt that I am.

Wall of text guy here; what you've failed to take from this is that your perspective is just as flawed as the one you are attacking. You are not in a situation, therefore you are not particularly privy to it.

It may well be that you and the individual you were corresponding with have the same exact sort of challenges as the other, or maybe not. You will never know.

In my experience with first generation or second generation Chinese immigrants is one of severe academic pressure from their parents, well beyond any expectations I and most of the person I grew up with ever faced. I speak, read and write a bit of Mandarin, it's something that after time in the military I've decided to center my professional life around. I continue to make efforts to meet, discuss with and understand the culture of Chinese people both American born and those born in China.

I agree with the other poster, I think they are pressed harder to succeed. To me it doesn't matter that you do not agree with others it's that your methodology for disagreement was juvenile, though, that I would expect more in a place like this is equally foolish.

That's all there is to it, you do not agree with a few posters and I find your ability to communicate your disagreement to be poor and indicative of considerable immaturity, so, enjoy the Olympics and consider that maybe you really should try to see the world from a position other than the one you currently occupy.

Tell me why is that stereotypes exist in the first place? Think about it for a bit, I'll wait.
Okay, now that you've had time to mull it over let's discuss the particular stereotype that is in question in this thread, for whatever reason, since this is originally about track and field.

The stereotype being that asians (we'll broaden it a bit here for the sake of truth to the stereotype) tend to end up in situations where they must take a considerable amount of higher math courses. Certainly not all asians fall under this stereotype. Just like not all white people from the southeast United States are not all racist, just like not all black people can dance, just like not all jews hoard money.

It's a stereotype, we'll define the word: "A simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group."
>> Anonymous
>>242999cont

So, that established even if you are asian, you do not necessarily face this, just like if you're white or black maybe you do face it. The contention by your opponent is that the Chinese culture tends to be one that emphasizes these sorts of benchmarks as needed for success and failure of a child to succeed is a failure of the parent. This is pretty much a fact, that is simply how it is.

I do not believe that he said under no circumstances will anyone else ever understand or be subjected to this, I don't have the energy to reread all of these posts.

As for being condescending, if anything, this guy was the picture of politeness and very indicative of his support for his country of birth, your attacks on him, regardless of what you (having changed the target more than once, evidently) say ((being angry at the stereotype)).

Furthermore, if your anger is at the stereotyping of white americans, or your particular ethnic group if it is otherwise, then why do you rail against what he has described as a simple cultural trait.

I'm no psychiatrist but I think your anger has another point of origin and your expression of it has been largely wild and ineffectual.

Finally, I can't see why I would be offended at a cultural trait of the Chinese, like I said, I know Chinese people, I interact with them frequently, I plan to make a career out of it. Here's an idea, if you can see this trait in a negative light do you also see Americans who buy into the concept of American exceptionalism is equally bad? That we're a great country that stands out above others? I think we do stand out above others, we produce more than most, we almost single handedly brought the world into the modern age and we can continue to be a force in the world by using our uniquely mixed cultures to bring out the best in our abilities.

By your estimation though, that's just a condescending stereotype.

That you refuse to acknowledge it is indicative your denseness or your inability to admit that you might have been wrong. Whichever is fine by me

I will simple my position up for you because I am going to sleep and I just could not live with myself if my position was misrepresented in your mind or the minds of others.

What I've simply said this whole time is that in general, on average, more often than not Chinese families tend to force their children further than Western families do.

Western families tend towards allowing more independent direction and development of interests and talents whereas Chinese families take a more active role in choosing for their children.

Neither way is wrong and there is no implication that Western parents do not care about their children or that they do not push children to take classes they would not otherwise. It all boils down to a difference in culture.

A difference in culture, that is my position. I can see your position but I could not make myself walk the path to arrive at it. I fundamentally disagree with your interpretation and I have called into question your maturity in expressing your disagreement in light of the otherwise civil tone of the conversation.

That's all folks. Not that more than two people are still reading this anyhow.

and my tone was the result of the fact that I don't like people telling me that I can't understand what it's like to have my mom choose something for me, just because I'm not chinese

I would never suggest that chinese have no concept of what it's like to be an individual simply because they aren't western or something equally absurd

even the thought of putting it in a hypothetical leaves a bad taste in my mouth
