A. Habs is an abbreviation of "les habitants," the informal name given to the original settlers of New France, dating back to the 17th Century. So it's a natural fit for the The Montreal Canadiens, established in 1909 and marketed as a French-Canadian hockey team.

Having said that, the nickname might have been the result of an error. According to NHL.com, the first man to refer to the team as "the Habs" was Tex Rickard, owner of Madison Square Garden, in 1924. Rickard apparently told a reporter that the "H" on the Canadiens' sweaters was for "Habitants." Not true. The distinctive C-wrapped-around-H logo stands for "Club de Hockey Canadien."

Caught another slow-mo replay of the penalty again last night. Looks like Richards did make contact with his shoulder, but the knee was there too, and from what we saw Kovalev's fulcrum was Richards' knee when he was going down. I still would have called the penalty, it was excessive of Richards to throw the knee out, and it looked blatant enough to warrant a trip to the box.

Thing is, you can't just stop calling borderline penalties with < 2 minutes left in a 1 goal game just because it might put one team in a bad position. You can bitch all you want about "giving the game away" and blatant favouritism, but everyone will always see the refs as favouring the other team as soon as a call doesn't go their way. This thread is living proof of that, with everyone accusing every team of having the refs on their side. A staggering majority of calls boil down to the judgement of the Ref, it's just that simple. Officials are, for the most part, neutral when calling a game (with a few notable exceptions, though I'm not going to name names). On the ice, we don't have the bird's eye camera angle and omniscience that viewers at home do, and when two seperate incidents happen where one is called as a penalty and the other isn't, it's usually because of the angle we see it at. A light shove from one angle can look like a vicious cross check from another, and if you have a serious issue with refs making snap judgement calls in the heat of the moment, well, go watch some fucking football instead of the fastest game on Earth.
>> Anonymous
>>75122
As much as I'd like to agree with you there, this game was not the case of that. That penalty was the only one called in the third period, and one of only 6 in the game (and 2 of those were coincidental minors.) There was a lot of calls that they let slide, and that's fine, if you continue to do it. You don't wait until the last minute of the game to take the whistle out of your pocket.

On the other hand, Hasenfratz could have been worried about possible fan backlash for NOT calling a knee on a decent scoring chance for Montreal with a minute and a half to go in the 3rd when they're down by one. I know this seems like a stretch, especially with the lax mindset on penalty calling all game long up til the last 2 minutes, but pressure influences calls. Consistency is one of the first things I teach younger guys to work on when they're head reffing. Call it tight, call it loose, but don't do both lest ye suffer the wrath of a crowd in full-on shitstorm mode.

But at the end of the day, Hasenfratz called a penalty that he thought needed to be called. You can't argue it now, and whether or not Montreal would have scored without the man advantage is going to remain a mystery. Like I said, it was a snap judgement call; and with 90 seconds left in the third with a 1 goal lead, the game needs to be called a little tighter. I'm not condoning making calls like that all the time, but... Well, perspective is everything. You can complain about it, you can praise it, but there's no point arguing about it with a ref on the ice, because you're never going to win.

About the high sticking goal... his stick hit the cross bar on the way down AFTER the puck hit was in the net. Watch the replay... you'll see it. This coming from a San Jose fan, that shouldn't have been a goal. Bad luck on the broken stick too... poor Flyers.
>> Anonymous
And, once again, a tripfag proves himself a retard and desperatly attempts to save face...only to continue to show their idiocy.

Richards did not "throw" his knee, Mr. ELITE HOCKEY REFEREE. His stance was wide through the entire hit. Why, Mr. Elite Hockey Referee? Richards' knew Kovalev could fake him out of his skates. Had Kovalev ducked the other direction, there would have been clear knee-to-knee contact.

UNFORTUNATELY, that wasn't the case. Richards led and connected with his shoulder. And, because he landed the clean hit first, incidental lower body contact is trivial. Kovalev was already headed towards the ice before his contacts Richards' lower body.

Even from the angle the penalizing ref was standing, it was more than apparent Richards made the initial hit with his upper body. That zebra made a horrible call, and there is no defending it. Even attempting shows that you're more interested in excusing the ref because you sympathize than because he made a decision.

warning for flyerfags: bending knees and putting sticks between a player's legs, even if the hit is made with the shoulder, can be seen as an infraction.

Whatever you say, or how loud you cry, the ref still had to either call the penalty or not call it, and he had to decide that within a fraction of a second. I would have called it too, without hesitation.

Even after watching the replay, I still can't be sure if it was the knee or the shoulder that hit, but the leg movement of kovalev can hardly be faked. lrn2logic

Shot 1 shows Kovalev's jersey flapping back while his upper body continues with momentum. This means Richards DID NOT MAKE SHOULDER CONTACT with Kovalev -- he whiffed on the shoulder check. Also, you can see Richards' stick go in between Kovalev's legs and appear to lift it up and trip Kovalev during the "hit".

Shot 2: A combination of elbow, knee and stick collide with Kovalev, but due to Richards' low stance and Kovalev's high one, they ALL connect with Kovalev's leg and cause the jerk reaction that knocks him off his feet.

It can SEEM like a clean hit, but the key factor is Richard's stick and knee on Kovalev. Look at shot 2 -- Those two connected with Kovalev's lower leg causing the huge motion that it did, and why it raised so high in the air. The line between Tripping and Kneeing on this one is a bit blurry, but WHAT the call is isn't as important as THAT the call was made.

And in the one second that the ref has to process whether that was a penalty or not, going from shot 1 only, I would call that every single time.

Call was as good as it could have been in the situation.

That was not a knee, or a trip. That was Kovalev trying to jump away from getting hit, but getting clipped while he was in the air.

A trip in the air is still a trip. Hit was not as clean as it should have been.

Knee out. Penalty. Period.

That's not sticking a knee out. That's bracing for a check. If it was his other leg, than yeah.

Doesn't matter though. What's done is done.

ITT : Baawwwwwing flyerfags who's team shouldn't even be in the playoffs and awesome Habfans who are totally right.

I have nothing against Montreal, but god damn Habs fans are retards.

Why the hell would they burn cars because they got to round two of the playoffs?

Why the hell do they 'boo' Briere?

Why the hell do they 'boo' the US national anthem?

What a bunch of cocks. Fucking French-Canadians. (Except for Jessica at work. She's the shit. Must be all the Western Candian exposure that made her awesome.)

I recall seeing Oilers games last season where those crazy Canuks belted out the US anthem with gusto. Warmed my cold heart, it did. I know Lauren Hart only does the US anthem (and occasionally that shitfest "God Bless Amerca", aka world's gayest song) here in Philly.. I wish they'd do Oh Canada too.

Canuck here. The first playoff game in Philly, where she did God Bless America split with Kate Smith on the monitor almost brought a tear to my eye. I know they did it every time since, but seeing it for the first time was amazing.

See, kids, this is why tripfaggotry is bad. He's clearly wrong, but can't admit it for fear of looking stupid on the intarwebs.

Your whole opinion stinks of a "referees are nevar wrong" bias. Richards clearly expects an open-ice shoulder check. Why else would he brace and turn his face away from Kovalev? Acting? Give me a break.

Richards was penalized because Kovalev tried to duck away. Do refs call penalties for incidental contact? Once in a while, but are those calls ever righteous? No. The ref made a bad call. Quit acting like it's the end of the world if you admit a ref can be wrong.
>> Anonymous
>>76729
That has nothing to do with tripfaggotry.

No one on the internet can admit they're wrong. Especially you apparently. Knee at an angle like that = penalty, end of story. You can say the refs wrong and bring up bullshit facts all you want, you're still a bad troll and even worse, you're wrong and can't admit it.

>>76735
That's actually the natural position for a body check. If it was kneeing, than it would have been how Richards right leg is sticking out, not tucked into him.
