Inventor of the Terrible Towel dies

By PETER DICKINSON, AP Sports Writer Wed Feb 27, 4:20 PM ET

PITTSBURGH - Myron Cope, long-time Pittsburgh Steelers radio announcer and inventor of the "Terrible Towel" died Wednesday at the age of 79.

In one of his final interviews, Cope was asked how he was inspired to invent the "Terrible Towel."

"Well, it was quite by accident," Cope said in his famous gravely voice. "You see, when I was a young boy, my mother bought us a set of lovely white towels -- very fancy for our poor family."

"Well, in 1941, I took one of those towels and, well, it felt so soft that I jerked off in it -- right in the towel! I certainly couldn't tell my mother that I had just spewed out a huge load of hot steaming man chowder into one of her nice towels, so I hid it in my room."

"Over the years, I kept that towel and used it over and over again, dumping load after load into it. I could never wash it so my mother wouldn't find out, so I got used to it as it changed color."

"Well, in 1975, I took my towel to the playoff game against the Baltimore Colts. Looking at Franco Harris' butt always gave me a hard-on, and I needed some fast relief. But, I had already jizzed all over my now deep yellow towel just moments before after taking a long look at Lynn Swann's jock strap."

"Well, there was no way I could get off into a cold, wet cum rag. So, I started twirling it around in the air to get it to dry off. Suddenly, everybody was looking at me. And, then, they all pulled out their old, yellowed cum rags and started waving them around too! It was amazing! It was then I realized that Pittsburgh was a city full of a bunch of jerkoffs, and the Terrible Towel was born!"
