Alright boxingfags, who's going for who?

I wish I could say Jones Jr. but its a weak choice for Calzaghe's last fight and I think they're both going out with a whimper. I predict a shoddy points win for Calzaghe, slightly more entertaining than the Hopkins match I guess.

I'm looking for Calzaghe to come back strong after that fairly limp fight against Hopkins (but then Hopkins has shown recently that maybe JC fought a better fight than we realized at the time). I don't think that Roy Jones, at this point in his career, has much of a chance outside of Calzaghe desperately under-performing.

Ah, the old Joe Calzaghe ducked big fights argument. Always a winner, except for the fact that it's bullshit, and big fighters ran the fuck away from Joe Calzaghe because they knew how good he was and also knew that his American profile wasn't big enough for them to be forced to take him on.
>> Anonymous
>>457697

Calzaghe works from flurries, not single-shot KO's. He openly states that he's not throwing all of his punches at full power, he just wants to throw some leather and overwhelm opponents, mixing in a few power shots with a few slappier ones so they don't know where the next hit is coming from. It's worked pretty well for him, you'd have to say.

Of course, you'd take it easily. You've not a pussy like the 32 pro fighters he's knocked out in his decade undefeated as a world champion. Hurrrrr.
>> Anonymous
I've got £10 riding on Calzaghe by stoppage in the 7- 9th round.
>> Casanova Frankenstein !upUGcHlgU2
>>458400

once again, ignore all the fucking cupcakes he fought like every pro fights coming up. Look at his stoppage record against world class competition. It's dismal. He can't throw power punches because he would shatter his china hands, thus, he has NO power. He adapted his style in kind.

>>458384
He ducked Roy Jones. He admitted it himself in his autobiography.
>> Anonymous
>>458449
What? Calzaghe never admitted to ducking RJJ. He just wanted to fight Roy and Hops in Wales. RJJ never cared for him which Roy Jones admits himself, and Hopkins, while already making a deal, just backed off because Warren couldn't produce the money.
>> Anonymous
>>458400
That was Calzaghe after the Robin Reid fight. Calzaghe lost confidence in keeping his hands healthy after breaking it then. And the consequent hand breaking he endured made him stop using his full power with all his shots.
>> Casanova Frankenstein !upUGcHlgU2
>>458474
Yes he did. Calzaghe hid in the supermiddleweight division fighting eurotrash instead of moving into light heavy or down to middle to fight the real talent.

He waited for a long time for roy jones to go away and become shot. now he wants to fight him. He even said before this fight was announced that he had "no interest in fighting a shot jones"
>> Anonymous
>>458487
Now you're just being a biased little prick. Joe was fighting for history. And he made it in the SMW division. There is no one in the American SMW scene that holds a candle even to the European fighters in it. Maybe Taylor, but Kessler would spark him out.

And he announced he didn't want to fight Jones but seeing Jones dismantle Trinidad made him pick the guy. Besides, Jones is the greater threat than Pavlik at this stage in his career and the bigger name as well. There are no other choices for Calzaghe now.
>> Anonymous
>>458487
Calzaghe could never make middle. He already has a hard time going down to super middle. And he tried to climb to LH 4 times, but he kept getting injured everytime, not including the other times he still got himself injured.

You know how you can tell when something is a real sport? When other sportsmen all love it.

Very few sports are as popular among sportspeople as boxing is. There's a reason why half of all sportsmen you ever hear asked the question say that Ali is their idol. It's a pure contest of strength, stamina, speed, heart and skill under the most intense pressure. You have to produce your best and keep calm while somebody is trying to do the same right in your face, and whichever of you fails to get it right gets punished by the technique and talent of the other. If boxing isn't a sport, then nothing man has ever invented can be called a sport. Bump for your moronic sage.

Jones isn't throwing too much right now. Calzaghe's left was low early on and he got caught with the right lead more than once, but not too much just lately. I can only think Jones is saving himself to try for a KO, otherwise he's just going to get walked all over at this rate.

What has Jones thrown to deserve the rounds you are giving him? I admit that Calzaghe threw a lot of slaps, but that's better than throwing next to nothing at all. This cut is a shocker too, he may not make the rest of the rounds at this rate.

>> Casanova Frankenstein !upUGcHlgU2
>>458857
that's because you, like 99% of the casuals, have no idea how to score a fight.

Joe is all flash and no substance. he moves in, eats a few counters, flurries, lands 1 slap out 13, then moves out.

He's not dictating the fight, he's not hurting roy, and he's not making him miss.

He is the very definition of ineffective agression.

He's landed enough for my money. I can't see a way anybody can score it for Jones, and I suspect you'll be disappointed when the scores come in.

Never say never though, perhaps the judges will agree with you. If Jones was still landing the single shots he was landing earlier I'd think maybe you had a point, but he may as well have his fists glued to his face at the moment, he's throwing so little.
>> Casanova Frankenstein !upUGcHlgU2
this fight was an abortion.

>> Casanova Frankenstein !upUGcHlgU2

You flatout dont know how to score fights.

7-5 joe would have been the fairest result if you thought he won.

7-5 jones was the correct result if you only score punches and not embarassing open handed slaps.

You probably thought calzaghe beat hopkins too.
>> Anonymous
>>458912

I know you wanted Jones to win and all, but he did nothing to deserve any of these phantom rounds you are giving him. Even if Calzaghe isn't landing hurtful punches, just standing there on the ropes eating everything he throws and landing nothing in return isn't going to win you any fights. Nobody is going to give you a round just for not getting hurt by the 50 punches your opponent tagged you with.
>> Casanova Frankenstein !upUGcHlgU2

Also, the TV pundits are fucking retarded.

British commentators were openly biased.

>> Casanova Frankenstein !upUGcHlgU2

>>458906
Calzaghe had the benefit of fighting nothing but chumps his entire career up until this point. Even his Roy's prime was in the mid 90's (which i'd argue that it was in 2001) he's still the best fighter Calzaghe has faced.
>> Casanova Frankenstein !upUGcHlgU2

Hell, even fat james toney would have beaten the fucking tar out of calzaghe.
>> Anonymous
I thought the decision to Calzaghe over Hopkins was fair, as once again Hopkins did nothing for huge portions of the fight. Again, not getting hurt by shots is not enough to win you fights on points, and it never has been.

Seriously, have you even watched a fight before? I know claim to be an amateur fighter, but you honestly don't seem to have a clue what you are talking about. I suspect you are suffering from American Boxing Blindness - a common affliction on many sports forums whereby many American fans just can't see a fight as having gone to anybody other than the American, no matter what happens. Calzaghe wasn't great tonight, but Jones was pathetic. Scoring any rounds for him after the first would be a pity gesture.

Same thing here. Fighters age different.

Jones had a style based entirely on speed and reflexes. he fought very often and at the highest level for over a decade. He's a 40 year old man with a ton of wear and tear on his body.

i cant believe people care that joe doesn't hit hard. how do you think he can throw so many punches? he's got the mental side of boxing to a t and that is why he's never lost.

Joe's too smart and too greedy to let himself get parkinsons.

What sucks is the actual nice british fighter ricky hatton, got fucked up by the american cherry picker Floyd Mayweather.

He's the first RING two weight champion because the ring is a shit rag.
There's been tons of Lineal multi-weight champions.

Joe's bums on average, were better than the glorfied clubfighters calzaghe fought.

And The Brown Bomber utterly OBLITERATED everyone put infront of him.

JC struggled with a bunch of his bums.

That's why my all time favorite fighter is Benny Leonard, right? One of the slickest fighters to ever live and the best lightweight in history.

I value all styles equally. My personal FAVORITE being true swarmers like harry greb, henry armstrong, Saad Muhammad, Dwight Qwai and Mike Tyson. I should like calzaghe, but his incessant cherry picking, and moneygrubbing attitude piss me off.

1. Makes him look classy
2. Keep DLH happy.
3. By inflating the reputation of Calzaghe, it makes the loss seem less embarassing in the eyes of historians.

>Go look up Sven Ottke's record on boxrec

Alright, you've tempted me back. Some of those decisions Ottke got were a fucking joke, I'm not surprised he never wanted to fight outside of Germany. If I wanted to watch somebody run around not throwing punches for half an hour I'd watch the women's 10k. It would be about as entertaining as an Ottke fight.

I presume you bring it up to say that the judges aren't always right (either that or you assumed I had never heard of Ottke, which I'll choose to ignore), and of course you are right. Some of them are so obviously on the take it isn't even funny (Lewis-Holyfield went past even that point). Decisions like that are a bit different than what we're seeing in this fight, though. It's not like all the fans saw it one way, and the judges fucked the fans and the real winner over - everybody, including Jones, saw it as a pretty easy Calzaghe win. Judging ain't perfect, but there really can't be any complaints about the integrity of tonight's decision when you see the almost unanimous agreement it has been received with.

Maybe you don't agree with the way fights are scored, but that's by-the-by. That's the way they have consistently been scored for Jones' entire professional career, and he went into that fight knowing that this "old-school" method you are talking about doesn't score with judges. If you think it should, that's another discussion, but you, me, and everybody else watching the fight has to deal with reality, not our own fantasies of how boxing should be scored.

of course i disagree with the way the fight was scored.

That was the entire point of my argument. Back in the day, effective aggression used to count for something

Judging hasn't been scored consistently since the 1950's.

>> Anonymous
>>459108

My point being that whether or not you agree with the standards judges hold fighters to, those parameters are the only ones that matter. Calzaghe fights the way he does because he knows it scores points - if Jones isn't smart enough or good enough to counteract that then that's his fault and he deserves to lose heavily. Nobody is fighting to live up to your ideals, they aren't fighting on the Casanova Frankenstein scorecard, they are fighting to win. You sitting there just ignoring the reality of boxing and declaring results ridiculously out-of-step with modern boxing then calling everybody else casual fans and idiots makes you look like a moron.

Right did anyone else see a good fight until round 5? After that it was just all srs and Calzaghe was just laughing, Might've been round 6 when he caught him with the cut punch but after that it was just like "okay stop the match please." Round 8 and so came along and everyone, even the commentators were shouting "STOP THE FUCKING MATCH YOU'RE GONNA BLIND HIM" and even Joe knew it. Hell by Round 9/10 he wasn't even punching him, he was pretending to land and just keep Jr. alive. That referee was terrible, I don't know who payed him off but I'm disgusted in that fight, and I'm a gorefag. I usually love people maimed and kicked the shit out of but by round 8 I was saying "stop the fucking fight."

It was ridiculous man, Jones Jr. was looking like a retard from round 11 hitting the odd punch and smilling as if he was saying "did I do right?" as Calzaghe was just wandering around like it was a sparring contest. Sickening. I hope both of them fight again.

Basically, he got a brutual beating from fitzsimmons who had loaded his gloves and just stood there taking it until fitzsimmons got tied and jeffries pummeled him.

You're going to have to shell out the cash for them, and the depressing part is alot of these fights were either never filmed or are in the hands of extremely paranoid private collectors.

The greatest fighter in history on resume alone is Harry Greb.
there are no filmed fights of him left in the public atleast. There are rumoured to be copies of Greb-Tunney 2 in the hands of private collectors.

is the source most people use.

If you're really serious and want to find the best stuff
go the www.eastsideboxing.com forums and look for a guy named Raging B(_)LL.
Just browse the classic forum and talk to the guys in there, they will steer you in the right direction.

Roy Jones was outmatched in this fight, obviously, past his prime.

The whole "slap" stuff was psychological technique, you guys gotta remember these guys are dumb as rocks, they get their heads beat in for a living.

Although as a Roy Jones fan I must say he had a chance to win this fight after the first round knockdown but obviously didn't have an answer for Calzaghe's speed.

That being said, Calzaghe is still a pussy, he never would've fought Jones 5 years ago, same as he won't fight Chad Dawson now. A pristine undefeated record looks better than anything, and he'll be glad to take it and run.

Sad end to an awesome career for Jones, he should've just stayed out after his two beatdowns at the hands of Johnson and Tarver, but still one of the best ever.
