GREATEST EVER OLYMPICS WAS 2004 IN ATHENS.
THEY WILL NEVER BE UPSTAGED AND I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD BE HELD IN ATHENS ONCE EVERY TWENTY YEARS DUE TO THE FACT THAT WE GREEKS INVENTED THESE GAMES. WE ARE SUPERIOR TO ANY OTHER COUNTRY HOSTING OR THAT WILL BE HOSTING THE OLYMPICS. WE OWN THIS SHIT. WE HAD THE GREATEST OPENING AND CLOSING CEREMONIES BECAUSE AND USED THE TRADITIONAL ANCIENT GREEK WAYS.
PIC RELATED. IT WAS THE GREATEST OLYMPICS EVAR.
PROVE ME WRONG.

Athens was the worst Olympics I've seen.

Been watching since Atlanta. Beijing was definitely the best so far.

Athen was a complete failure - back in 2004 - and it has been a complete disaster for Greece in 2008.

'A staggering 21 out of 22 venues lie abandoned since an event lasting just three weeks was held, and the magnificent stadiums are now over-run with rubbish and weeds. But the most striking 'legacy' has been the huge sums spent - and wasted - on venues to hold sports with little following in Greece.

While the country's budget has plunged into the red by more than six per cent - some say the borrowing costs of the event have reached £35 billion - the Olympic legacy dominates political life in Athens.'

"ATHENS--The large open area surrounding the major cluster of this city's Olympic venues remains as unpleasantly barren as it was during the 17 days of the 2004 Summer Games.

No major events have been held at the pool complex since 2004, and the lack of effective maintenance was obvious: Tiles were missing on the deck, and rust stains in the pool showed the signs of slow decay. A crew was trying to remove accumulated grime from the diving well.

In the main stadium, permanent home field for the AEK soccer team and site of frequent major concerts, seat backs were dirty and the concrete aisles and walkways stained. A feeling of benign neglect permeated the 26-year-old stadium, renovated to be the jewel of an Olympics that cost the Greeks billions of dollars for lasting infrastructure and temporary operations.'

'As Beijing hands the Olympic baton to London, there is growing anger in Athens over what the Games have left behind in the ancient city. Many of the venues built for the 2004 Games in the Greek capital now stand locked, deserted, covered in graffiti, and inaccessible to the public.

And that Greek public is increasingly asking what will happen to those expensive venues and how much the Games will eventually cost them. Official figures put the final cost at £8bn but there are fears it could nearly double.'

Of the 22 venues in the city, 21 are in a state of disrepair and under guard to prevent vandalism. Athens spent more than £9 billion on staging the Olympics, slightly less than the current estimate for the London games.

The hangover from the games was tremendous. Greece was left with a national budget deficit of 6.1 per cent, more than twice the maximum allowed under European Union rules.

A few miles outside the city centre, the sprawling Faliron complex that once hosted the beach volleyball and taekwondo competitions is deserted and a lone security guard has not been able to deter youths from spraying the walls with slogans.

No, best one was the 1964 Olympics. If they hold the 2016 Olympics in Tokyo, then that might be able to top it.

Modern olympics just cost too much to be held anymore, looks like only left the northern hemisphere countries and australia able to do that.

wtf, why dont they just open them to public use.

On the London 2012 site it already states that the pool they are making will easily be switched into a public one. Fuck it even has a Cafe.

After an Olympics I am sure most of the locals would love to throw away their cash at a chance to swim or whatever in the venues of the Olympics. Greece failed

“Hitler didn't snub me—it was [FDR] who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram.”

"'When I passed the Chancellor (Hitler) he arose, waved his hand at me, and I waved back at him. I think the writers showed bad taste in criticising the man of the hour in Germany"

The Nazis let Owens eat with everyone else, the German fans liked him.

When Owens went back home, he rode in a freight elevator to his own reception 'cause he was black.

He was kicked out of the athletic community and had to do stunts like racing against horses. Eventually went bankrupt
