Weird Sports Traditions Anonymous
/sp/artans:

Spinning off a /hoc/ thread, I'm just curious: what's the weirdest sports tradition you know? Name it and describe it.

I'm from Detroit, so I've got the Octopus throwing. Before/during/after Red Wings playoff games, one or two octopuses get thrown onto the ice as kind of a good luck token. After it is thrown, this guy picks it up and runs off the ice spinning it over his head.

It should be known this tradition predates the rat-trick by about 40 years. So take your rats and fuck off.

(asked this in another thread that mentions the octopus throw)

Now that playoffs require 16 wins instead of 8 (and they now hang two octopi from the roof of the Joe instead of one as a result), does that mean that there's actually two Detroit mascots and one has simply been left nameless all this time?

Poor octo ;_;

Nothings says "fear our team" like singing the same song Jerry freaking Lewis sings at the end of his telethon.

No. They're both named Al. *shrug*

Or maybe one is named Al, the other Sobotka.

See, for the longest time I could have sworn their names were Al and Syd but I can't find anything that would tell me where the fuck I got the name 'Syd' from.

I have no idea where you got Cid either.

Maybe Al and Stanley? I seem to remember always calling it Stanley when I was younger.

Nothing says "fear our team" like singing the same freaking black american slave spiritual.

Seriously, can't the English even use their own damn songs?
