The International Olympic Committee has ordered an investigation into the age of Chinese gymnast He Kexin, The Times of London reports. Faced with almost insurmountable evidence which suggests that He is two years younger than the birth date listed on her Chinese passport, the IOC has launched an inquiry that could result in the stripping of He's gold medals.

Nothing will come of this. All of the "evidence" is digital, which allows China to say they were faked or mistyped. And IOC (and the US gov't) doesn't really want to pick a fight with China over some shitty medals.
>> Anon
the real question is, if they strip her medals, what happens to the team title? when Marion Jones admitted to juicing, they took the medals from her relay teammates as well...will that happen here???

Being more nimble and fearless. Being young can be a sizable advantage in gymnastics. Plus chances are, they prolly were the best of the crop too.

Girls gain excess body mass during puberty, which makes it harder to do flips and shit.
>> SSG Posted Here
>>283014
People are moar flexible/nimble at a younger age.
The funny thing is the judges would have given them the Gold anyway, so their breaking the age rules was extremely retarded.
Now didn't Britain finish fourth both in the team event and the individual event that this 14 year old won? I'm surprised the Brits are not flipping out on this, especially since they would love to beat the Russians and Australians in the medal count, and this could give them a way better shot at doing that.
>> Anonymous

It's more than just weight. Shorter people have a smaller moment of inertia and therefore can flip faster. Simple physics.

Maybe, but I think the medal count is a little bogus. Team gold is more important but still only counts as one medal. China has excelled in individual events (a near sweep in women's shooting and weightlifting-WAT) while the United States does well in team events.

The fact is, there is no data or evidence (and no consistent theory) either that younger gymnasts perform better, when we're talking about those age ranges. The Americans are whining because they can, not because they should.

My reaction is just like Bela's. No one is denying she's good, but it's just that China is blatantly flaunting the rules that are angering people. Websites suddenly not working when people find evidence, official paperwork with false ages, etc.
>> Anonymous
Wait, isn't one of their divers (Chen Ruolin or some such) fifteen? Are the rules for diving different, because NBC has consistently listed her as fifteen without even bringing up the age thing.

thats the problem with the olympics working on a national basis. bets on that this scandal has NOTHING to do with the 'chinese government', or the chinese period. it will be the cause of a couple of crazy trainers.
>> Anonymous
>>283103
I'm not sure about diving, but there IS a rule that allows gymnasts to compete if they are turning 16 the same year of the competition. One of the romanian or russian girls was 15 this competition IIRC.
>> Anonymous
>>283103
Well, this IS a gymnastics thread, but the age is that during the olympic year, meaning people born 1992 or earlier would be eligible. The Chinese did have a 15 year old on the team, but her birthday is later in the year.
>> Anonymous
>>283113
Because the government would have no hand in false government issued passports.
>> Anonymous
>>283125

Well, okay, perhaps the government are on the back foot and trying to cover up shit so their whole nation doesnt become an international joke.

It would have been the trainers who chose the athletes though is what i mean.
>> Anonymous
>>283130
If they didn't want to become an international joke they could have addressed the issue when it first came up. They have not helped themselves in improving their image by ignoring the issue. Either way (14 or 16) China will not look good coming out of this ordeal.
>> Anonymous
>>283125

It's easy to obtain fake government papers in countries with lots of corruption and poor regulation (like China).

I live in a South American country, and I've had to get some fake papers made because somebody typed my name wrong into the system, and turned me into an illegal alien. What I did was bribe a former police officer, then he called his buddy at the local government office and gave him a cut of the bribe, then we went to the office during the weekend and printed out the correct official papers.

I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to get a fake passport printed in China. The Chinese gov't might not be involved in this scandal.

But being the Olympics, this issue was brought up before they even started competing. China should've looked deeper into this if they were serious about having a clean competition. Seeing as how they were taking websites offline, I think the officials all knew she was underage.
>> Anonymous
>>283163

It's a true story. A fucking government clerk typed my name wrong into the computer, which meant my visa and ID card didn't match my passport. It took about 300 dollars worth of bribes to fix this mistake. Fucking lazy, incompetent latinos...

They were working hard on improving their image ever since the 1984 olympics when they crossed the Soviet boycott. 16 years old girls are heavier than 14 years old girls because most 16 years old girls finish developing and get more fat (like hips, thighs..etc) girls that have a more stick-like figure have an advantage over girls that have more shape. Also there is like a 30 pound difference between the chinese and american. The skinnier you are the better your balance is.

Younger girls being fearless was quoted by a female gymnast in an article. They do not know failure and deal better with attempting these things.
>> Anonymous
>>283938

from experience my little brother did the most retarded, dangerous things when he was 13 and tape them. When he looks back at it he goes "I can't believe I did that".
>> Anonymous
>>283054

Its fearless with regards to training, not competition.

It's a lot easier to teach a younger person more difficult/dangerous skills because they're a lot less aware of the dangers and potential injuries. You're much more willing to try everything your coach tells you. You've also, as a younger athlete, usually experienced less injuries than an older gymnast so you dont have the "I broke my penis on this move, im not sure i can do it now" in the back of your mind every day.
>> Anonymous
She's not 14. China willingly gave the IOC old passports and ID's to investigate.

Why would they bother forging OLD passports? If her birth date is confirmed on her old passport, then I'm going to believe it, and be fucking surprised at that young looking chink.

Source?

I'm aware that the IOC did an investigation before the Olympics begin, but weren't aware of the specifics.

Currently, all there is are some excel spreadsheets that said she born in 1994. If it is indeed true that China gave them old passports, than that's pretty hard to go against. All that I'm aware of is that her new passport issued in February showed she was 16.
>> Anonymous
It doesn't matter what the IOC finds or doesn't find.

The Chinese government is extremely authoritarian they can forge whatever the fuck they want to do and there's nothing you could do because you don't have access to the documentation.

You're talking about a country that will try to use anything as propaganda to show their dominance.

BY THE WAY, CHINA DID THIS IN SYDNEY IN THE 2000 OLYMPICS. The chinese gymnast that won gold was 14 at the time, and admitted to it later on. China has and does forge documents to do this shit.

Despite persistent questions about the ages of several members of the Chinese women's gymnastics team that won the gold medal, the International Olympic Committee said Friday there is still no proof anyone cheated and believes the controversy will be "put to rest."

>>284360

Yeah, produced them from photoshop.
>> Anonymous
>>284360
it doesn't matter if they produce a birth certificate, passport, driver's license, social security card, or have it written in the sky

the whole point of the matter is that the chinese gov't controls all documentation and if they wanted to forge shit, you best believe it'd be forged on all levels/departments

at this point, the government might not have been involved in the original forging, but now there's too much national pride, etc...at stake and they're going along with it for sake of 'glorious peoples' nation,' etc...

if you think it's a coincidence that all these cached webpages of He's age are disappearing moments after they're found, i've got a bridge in brooklyn i'd love to sell you

The 16 yr old age rule is there to prevent nations from exploiting children at a really young age. Which is all pointless because the Chinese do it anyway, regardless of what the age rule is. They are stolen from their families at like 4 and put into a government machine. So the 16 yr old age rule is dumb to begin with because China exploits children no matter what.
