He was already paid. You see, professionals have these papers they sign called "Contracts." These contracts, offered by the professional sports franchise, guarantee the signer a certain amount of money for their professional services, usually for a certain amount of money over a certain amount of time.
Once said contract is signed, it is legally binding until either the time specified in the contract is up, or one of the two sides breaches that contract. If one side(usually the signer) decides halfway through his contract that he deserves more money, that's tough shit and he shouldn't have signed it in the first place. The signer is often told to shut up and play, but often makes a media circus out of the situation and demands to be traded.
