The worst story ever? In the late forties, the Red Sox had a chance to sign Willie Mays for a pitance, and turned him down, even after the head scout of the Red Sox told them this guy could be the best baseball player in history, and make Ted Williams look like a minor leaguer in comparison. They refused solely for the color of his skin, and he signed with the Giants. There is no doubt in my mind the Red Sox, with Mays, could have gotten over the second/third place hump of the fifties and most of the sixties and gotten to the world series more than once, and that they would have ended the curse way back in 67 if they had him. IMHO, racism is why they didn't win until 04, and I think there is no coincidence that three of the four biggest heroes of that year (Ortiz, Manny, Pedro) were not white. However, the fact Schilling got all the love in Boston shows why the KKK may move their headquarters to Boston someday.
>>421046 Not just Russell; all the black players on the Celtics were treated like dirt by their home crowd, though Russell was treated the worst, due to his being outspoken about civil rights. It shows that the team and it's players deserved to win, but the fans didn't deserve the team they had.
