Quick question.

What is your opinion, as foreigners, on the AFL (Australian Football League)?

I think it's one of the best sports in the world, which requires a good combination of speed, strength, skill, and smarts.

If you're going to express your dislike for the game, please give good reasons why.

I think that if the AFL were to expand into North America, even if it were only 1 N.A that got into the AFL, it would do wonders for the sport. There's talks of one of the new teams being mainly comprised of Irish folk, similar to the Boston Celtics in the NBA.

Here's some highlights from the start of last season.

I like what I've seen of it. AFL is my favorite 'foreign' sport. I like it a little more than rugby, and a hell of a lot more than soccer football. I don't like cricket at all.

Also, I don't know if one could really consider the Celtics a team of 'mainly Irish' players, even historically. Usually just one or two micks on the roster at most if any.

If I want to see a bunch of ex-cons fight it out I'll just watch a Raiders game.

AFL is a brilliant game!

im a soccerfag but i still appreciate how good and tough the sport is

OP here.

I bet the Brits are pretty pissed now that we're living in a sunny, spread out paradise.

Enjoy your cramped space! :)

>>214187

That's how it originated. I know it's not Irish people on the team, but that's where the funding, etc comes from

>>214179

I despise rugby with a passion. Requires no skill other than basic hand-eye co-ordination.

The celtics AFL team is pure marketing stuff: the game has a significant Irish audience apparently, not to mention its historical links to gaelic football

I think the AFL are good custodians of Australian footy overall, so long as they don't turn down FAGGOT AVE. aka NFL with 1 million hours' advertising, fuck cheesy entertainment and (christ forbid) cheerleaders

I can see a real power-assertion problem down the track though when foreign countries start their own professional leagues.

An AFL league exists in the U.S and Canada at the moment already, it's just not televised.

I think it would rake in millions if AFL were to even have 1 team from North America.

The only problem with Aussie rules is that it only ever gets discussed on sp in a trolling context.

But of course I understand that most Australian 4channers aren't going to choose /sp/ - NBA NFL NBA NFL NBA NFL NBA NFL NBA NFL NBA NFL NBA NFL NBA NFL NBA NFL as their no. 1 place of congregation.

To discuss footy, that is.

I just go to a forum dedicated to my team to discuss footy.

I was just wondering what an outside perspective on the game would be like.

At least watch the youtube vid.

Awesome catches.

afl is full of fail.

I've had friends in Ausfailia send me some matches. It's pretty horrible sport, and I watch the NFL.

It's pretty boring to watch, and seems to require little skill, only the ability to kick the ball. And players seem to fall on the ground a fair bit...

and imo, this is an epic troll, but as it has fallen into proper discussion, it's a fail troll. 3/10

I'm 100% serious. I'm guessing that you're the true troll.

You have to be able to have endurance, ability to kick, jump, catch, tackle, and dodge with good efficiency if you want any chance to win.

In NFL, what does an offensive tackle have to do? He runs forwards and hits people.

Bit of a difference, don't you think?

I reckon Solomon will get about 6 weeks and kerry will get 4 because of his bad record.

It really shows the class of players out west.

Eagles lose Cousins and Judd and they're in the shitter.

Fremantle use despicable tactics and still fail horribly.

>>214303
All you really need in AFL is the ability to kick the ball far and chase after it. Now I've only watched a handful of games, but that's all I can see in it.

I'm not trolling, but I think I understand why there's only 1 country in the world that takes this sport seriously

>>214306

Yes because only WA players get reported. Nice one genius.

>>214307

Yes and NFL is both loved and adored worldwide.

There's 2 that take Grid Iron seriously.

There's 2, possibly 3 that take baseball seriously.

Whether the world likes it or not, the U.S is the dominant power at the moment. Of course you're going to be in the spotlight. You have over 14 times the population that Australia does as well as the financial backing.

Just because a sport isn't viewed by the vast majority, doesn't make it worse.

You could say the exact same thing about baseball, soccer, nfl, golf, or any other sport.

The fact is, AFL encompases far more than just 1 aspect. You need to be good at everything in order to do well.

Oh for sure. I know why the NFL and MLB are only big in the US. They're shit sports.

I can't understand why soccer is so big though

>> Anonymous
>>214329
It's popular because it's simple as others have said but also because any group of people can just start playing without it getting too serious.
Rugby and NFL need to have refs to play anything other than just mucking around with friends.

Have been watching it for quite a while, and still cannot put myself into liking it.
>> Anonymous
I used to watch it late at night when I had insomnia. It was OK. But unless you grow up watching a sport I think it's hard to get really into it.
>> Anonymous
Euro-Rugbyfag here, its an allright game if you play it yourself but it kind of sucks as a spectator.
>>214303
I'm a rugby prop and could beat most of the local school players in every aspect besides pinpoint-accurate kicking and getting the high mark...
>> Anonymous
Watched it when I was in Australia. Seemed OK-ish but I don't think I could really get into it, which is also what I think about NFL from the times I've watched it

soccer isn't going to catch on in the US anytime soon

>>214446

completely irrelevent but yes

I live in the US and have followed this game for quite some time now It used to be on ESPN so there is no excuse for some people to not know what this sport is. These days it runs on the more obscure Setanta Sports.

I used to LOVE this game but some of the added rules to the game lately are rediculous and make it less fun to watch.. they absolutely need to get rid of the hands to the back rule

it looks like there would be a shitload of neck injuries and back injuries from fags coming and jumping on your back

Not really. The majority of injuries are hamstring, knee, and ankle.

My Tigers are facing you this week. ;)
Your club's suspended Lovett-Murray for 2 weeks for not showing up to training. Certainly gives us a better shot at a win. You guys are on fire at the moment.
