Oh, look what's happened! This is funny, you just told us how bad it was to do stuff like this... You guyz are so funny! ahahaha

It's just really different from the NFL, it's not really breaking out into a sport amerifags like that much yet. Big names do own some teams though. BON JOVI!!!

Because the average football fan can't comprehend other sports similar to the NFL and the NFL itself co-existing?

Personally I enjoy AFL more than NFL. You get scores like 73-65 as opposed to 14-7.

Yes, said ONE of those guys. See look so far you have very little trolling in your thread... Why not just leave our criticizing threads be too? Would be much more friendly around here.

Ausfag here: please don't blame us all for the actions of a 14 yr old troll.

I have seen some 'nerf NFL' on the net and it looks pretty fun. Wouldn't mind checking out a game next time I'm back in the states.

i hope you do - though skip the nfl and go straight for a college football game in the south (get there several hours early for tailgating).

i'd love to catch an aussie rules game if i ever make my way down undah - looks like it'd be a blast.

Cheers for the tips. Can anyone go to college games or is it restricted to people who actually have a connection with the uni?

I don't really care for aussie rules tbh. Rugby is more my style.

either aussie rules or rugby would work for me. i've never seen a live match of either, and i think the spectacle of one would be worth the price of admission.

as for college football, you can buy tickets even when not affiliated with the school, but it's a lot harder to get them (especially some of the traditional powerhouse teams, who routinely sell out their stadiums). one thing to try is find somebody who goes to a particular school and can get student tickets - by far the rowdiest sections in the stands. some schools check student ids to get in for student tix, but not all. and truth be told, without a rooting interest the game itself isn't always that much fun (i mean, i love it, but i'm a huge fanatic, so i don't consider my personal opinion valid in this case). the real spectacle is the pre- and post-game festivities.

that's why i say go to a game in the south - nobody tailgates like southern football. i recommend the world's largest outdoor cocktail party, if you can get tickets. northeast florida in late october, with thousands and thousands of people arriving long before the game itself and partying throughout the day and long into the night. bring some beer and find yourself a welcoming tailgate party.

i guess it is a bit of an american phenomenon (the name, at least, if not the practice). tailgating comes from the idea of partying around the back of a truck (a 'tailgate') - but it's evolved from that to basically mean lots of grilling and drinking beer in the vicinity of a major sporting event. for smaller schools, it's usually done in the parking lot, and really is still your typical 'tailgate,' with people just packing a bunch of stuff in the back of their cars and then working from there.

see: http://www.pittstategorillas.com/facilities/pics/tailgating-04.jpg

the key is, if you go to a really good event, the tailgating is much more elaborate. there's usually designated areas where people set up tents and the like, and have multiple grills going with a ton of different types of food (though i hate to sound to "amerikkkan" here, don't ask for anything but meat unless you're SURE they're offering an alternative - it's viewed as weak, correct or not). the beer is plentiful, everybody's in a good mood, and you can hop from tent to tent. as long as you've got a spare six pack to offer the cook and (generally) your own food to cook, you're usually welcomed into the party.

sample from espn, about tailgating at auburn (college games are on saturdays):

"How crazy does it get here? A friend recently covered a game on Labor Day weekend. Kickoff was 6:30 and he pulled off the highway from Atlanta at 3:30. He saw the roadside crowded with people tailgating and figured he must be near the stadium. He finally arrived at Jordan-Hare … nine miles later. When he asked the parking attendant at the media lot what time the fans started showing up, the man replied, "Seven in the morning … Thursday morning. And they aren't leaving after the game, either.''"

Excellent fill-in on the basic Wiki info, Anon! Also, tailgating in the US is seen a lot at music concerts, especially for those in the "jam band" genre, at big multi-artist rock or country music festivals, or for old farts like Jimmy Buffett. Frankly, if you give Americans any time and space to wait for ANYTHING, a barbecue grille and a cold beer will appear faster than you can say "not a sport."

heh, very true. although, again, nobody does it like they do in the south. i've been to good ones in the midwest and even california (rose bowl fuck yeah), but in all honesty there's nothing better than a warm southern evening, a nice grilled steak, a foothills beer, and a football to toss around.

and then we americans wonder how we end up so fat, hah.
