/sp/ I just started playing rugby. Any protips you can impart onto me?

My tip is to stay scrawny and wiry so you are hard to hit. Then you can come onto /sp/ and say you are tough for not wearing pads even though you actually get touched by an opponent an average of three times a game.

fail tip is fail

those three times you will be hit you will have a rib broken. put on weight and do squats so that you pull faggots across the try line.

Depends on your position for specifics, but in general terms:

If you are a forward, don't commit yourself to breakdowns which have already been decided. If you can see that a ball has either been won or lost, and the ruck or maul is secure, either plug a gap in the defensive line, or go and stand behind your fly-half/centres so you can be a crash ball option if they want to use it, or so you can be first to the next breakdown if they don't. Don't get in the way of the backs, always be slightly behind the attacking line so they can do their thing without you getting in the way.

If you are a back, don't think it excuses you from working to secure possession at the breakdown. Get your hands dirty when necessary, and be prepared to act like a back-row forward in a pinch. Otherwise, keep your nose clean and always be alert to where the gaps on the field are, both in attack and defense.

Overall, defensively, tackle according to your size. If you are capable of delivering crunching upper body hits then do so, but not at the expense of tying up the ball. If you are smaller, be content with low tackles to stop the man. Offensively, don't run sideways if you have men outside you. Draw and pass at all times. Never ship on bad possession - take responsibility for a loose ball and take the hit yourself, paddling it on only makes it worse.

Always be committed in contact. Going in half-hearted will lead to bad injuries. Never say a word to the ref, don't get sucked into fights with dirty opponents, and make sure you break the rules exactly as much as the referee will let you.

Go for the knees. Play dirty, kick people, rake there backs etc.
