I thought he was MVP? Where are all the Phillyfags now?

Have a seat right over there....

Howard can be awesome. But it is generally just massive amount of rape in a streak this year that gives him great stats for HRs and RBIs but for most of the year just makes us sit there hoping it happens for the rest, leading to disappointment.

can you please say "platoon" once for me?

MVP gets voted on before the playoffs, so what does his ass play matter now? I think Pujols should get it, but Howard getting it wouldn't be THAT big of a joke.

>>424708

Hi. I for one never thought Howard deserved MVP this year, even while he was tearing it up during the stretch run. He's not even the team's most valuable player (who would be Hamels or Lidge, even if pitchers are never 'mvp's.)

Because all I heard from Philly fans was how Howard lead his team to the postseason yet somehow right now he can't buy a hit to save his life.

Well, you're smart unlike the majority of people who vote on the MVP award and live in Philadelphia. I agree that Cole Hamels was the Phillies MVP this year, either him or Utley.

I dunno if Lidge would be an MVP - a much more deserving choice is Chase Utley, who is a fucking beast at everything he does.

Except that Utley only hit eight (8) HRs after the all star break. Granted, he was hurt (hip) for the 2nd half of the season, but you can't win an MVP award when your average and HR totals drop WAY off in the 2nd half.

Down the stretch, NOBODY was bigger than Howard. He raised his average 30 points and hit MANY HRs in the 2nd half while amassing 146 total RBI.

You can't win an MVP award when your batting average is .251 over the whole season and amass more strikeouts than hits. September stars are nice and all but you have to be able to produce over the whole year. Howard didn't.

Hamels was more valuable to the Phillies over the whole year than Howard.
>> Anonymous
I don't know what his deal is...but he has been a black hole in the lineup all post season. He's struggling miserably. Offensively and defensively, he's been baaaaad.

As for him being the MVP, he probably doesn't deserve it, but... so many people have the thought in their mind that an MVP has to come from a playoff team. It's a stupid idea, but a lot of people DO vote on that term. Phillies made the post season... Cardinals didn't.
>> Anonymous
subway should drop his endorsement until he gets a hit.
>> Anonymous

He had 3 hits in game 5 of the NLCS
>> Anonymous
either Ryan Howard or Pat Burrell or J-Roll need to hit more, or the Phils can wave the World Series goodbye.
>> Anonymous
>>424818

Not true. Hamels won what...14 games? How many did Howard win in September alone?
>> Anonymous
>>424842
The only way I wouldn't agree with your statement is if Hamels could pitch every game.

Phillies are on a roll but its on a matter of time till the lack of production from stars fucks them. Guys you'd never expect to carry the team are doing the job right now and it won't last. It doesn't matter if Howard breaks out if Rollins and does and Burrell can hit a few bombs.
>> Anonymous
>>424842
It's crazy. During the regular season their 7,8,9 hitters were basically a dead spot. Now they're carrying the team in the playoffs. If Rollins, Howard, and Burrell can start putting the bat on the ball, they could clean up.
>> HKK !h7MHU9L/Oo

>> Anonymous
>>424851

More than heard of them. But they are NOT relevant to the argument at hand. The fact remains that Hamels did NOT WIN those games. I'm the biggest Phils fan alive, but the fact remains that Howard won MORE GAMES for the Phils than Hamels did. Bullpen collapse or not, the FACT is that they lost some those games. In fact, they lost MOST of those games. I realize he has no control over when he comes out of the game, no control over run support, and no control over what the bullpen does after he leaves. But all that matters at the end of the season is WINS. I lost a bet with a friend because I said Hamels would finish top 3 in Cy Young voting. He will not, because playoffs don't count. The FACT here is that Howard CAUSED more WINS than Hamels. Hamels may have CONTRIBUTED to wins (and honestly probably should have a good 10 more wins), but he just simply did not CAUSE those. Also, even if he WON EVERY start (33 or 35 or whatever), is that more than Howard won? I don't have the stats, but I'd be interested to know.

>>424880

If you replace Ryan Howard with Matt Stairs, Matt Stairs would hit more homers and drive in more runs.
>> Anonymous
>>425463
No he wouldn't...everyone in this thread is a troll and a jackass who knows nothing about baseball. I'm not even a philly guy but 48 hrs and 146 rbi is a lot of production for a platoon player...does he deserve mvp this year? hell no! but did he deserve it the year he won it...hell yes
>> Anonymous
>>425476

MATT STAIRS WOULD IN OCTOBER.

Ryan Howard is a feast or famine hitter, and while he had a great Sept, his october just sucks ass. The even bigger problem is that Howard doesn't walk, so pitchers have no incentive of being careful with him. Pitchers know Howard swing has huge holes, and that he won't adjust. Howard constantly reaches for the home run swings and strikes out constantly.

Which was only two years ago....he didnt suck this year either he just was far from stellar. Not saying he deserves MVP, or even consideration for the award, but to call him a replacement player you should probably start watching another sport because your clearly an idiot when it comes to baseball
>> Anonymous
>>425503

His defense was horrible in 2006.

The 2008 MVP push for Howard is hilarious. Whats the lowest OPS+ has a 1st baseman had for the MVP? People will point to his 48 homers, but he only has 26 and admittally 4 triples. He has 'power' but he doesn't have gap power. He's too slow to get to 2nd base on a solid hit to the outfield, so if he does hit the ball, its either a weak single, or a homerun. Which I guess you can live with, but he only had 153 hits, and a .251 BA. So you're basically gambling that he'll get a hit per 4 at bats, and that hit will be a home run.
>> Anonymous
>>425507

He was 12th in all 1st baseman this year, and I doubt Ryan Howard would break a top 50 list of players when you factor into offense or defense.

Holy shit, Pujols had the better year in 06 and he was on a playoff team that won the world series. WTF.
>> Anonymous
>>425510
>>425512
Valid points, but he's not as slow as you would think when rounding the bases...he's just incredibly slow out of the box. He isn't a butcher fielding the ball, but absolutely throws like a girl. Is he the best player in baseball? Not even close.

That isn't my argument though, the argument is that he is much better than a replacement player like everyone in the thread has been labeling him. Also, he did deserve the MVP in 2006.

20 years from now when he's retired and is the all time HR leader and potentially the all time RBI leader are you faggots going to still be crying "platoon player?"

probably, because you guys seem to always find minor flaws in popular/highly-touted players and exaggerate the shit out of it to look cool and different.

name one platoon that averages 50 HR a year

Easy, Ryan Howard. Ryan Howard doesn't hit lefties. What don't you understand?
>> Kilgamayan !2BklmILFiE
>>425484

WARP1 is a bit better for single-season comparisons (WARP3 is used for cross-era comparisons since it's adjusted for history), but the result is the same: 7.9 for Hamels, 5.0 for Howard.

Both are inferior to Utley's 10.4, but that's not relevant to Hamels being more important to Philly than Howard.

Ryan Howard 2008:

35 Postseason at bats, 8 hits, 9 walks. And two extra base hits, two doubles. Oh yeah, he sure 'worth' $15 million. You're gone to the world series despite Ryan Howard, not because of him. If Charlie Manuel had a clue, he'd move Pat Burell up the lineup and move Ryan Howard to 6th or 7th. The guy's just living up on his reputation, and is a horrible fielder.

>all-time home run leader

I don't think so, he's older than Pujols but didn't break into the majors until much later and his home run numbers against lefties have taken a nose dive every year. He'll probably end up with 500 homers but then again Dave Kingman hit 442.
