So who the fuck else loved gymnastics way more than they thought they would? I mean, I'll admit I first tuned into the team prelims because of the Shawn Johnson promos I saw, but really other than just the drooling over her and her teammates, I really came to respect the sport.

I mean, watch some of their shit in slo-mo and tell me you could do even part of one skill. I mean look at this fucking flip.

Pic definitely related.

I'm fairly sure I could fall off a beam surprisingly well.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Whenever I watch gymnastics, the athleticism involved never fails to impress me. I'm sure that I'll be equally surprised when I see it again in four years.

fix'd for me, but seriously I've always had a soft spot(my penis hurr derp) for gymnastics but the new scoring systems imo really took out some of the artistry. I look forward to 2012.

do they air "the world gymnastics championship? or whatever they're called?

I never watched/appreciated gymnastics before this year. How was it scored before?
>> Anonymous
FSN usually airs College Gymnastic on the weekends. But its obviously not on the level of the Olympics, and you aren't in awe at the competitors.

They always air the US Olympic Trials before the Olympics. I've watched that this year. Dunno about World's tho.

Nastia will be 22, so most likely out as well, though with her background theres still a chance she could come back
Shawn will be 20 and she said she would definately like to do it again so she will most likely be back in 2012

I'm with you on this, OP. The gymnastics competition for these Olympic games were highly entertaining.

I've enjoyed watching Olympic gymnastics since the '96 games, but I think like most spectators, that's typically the only time I have any interest in it. To a great extent, I'm certain the reason for this is knowing that you'll never see more talented athletes competing in that field than you do at the Olympics.

Now, thanks to Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin, I won't forget so soon how fun it can be to watch. Perhaps I'll follow a tad more closely. I'm always astounded by the level of skill and artistry on display in gymnastics when I see them, I've just needed a reminder every couple of years.

Just find it funny that everyone is raving about women's gymnastics but couldn't care less about the men's side.
>> Anonymous
>>295797

At the risk of sounding gay I found the men's routines a lot more exciting then the women's. High bar for one.
>> Anonymous
>>295797
Well, I was being a little facetious, honestly. Men's gymnastics is also interesting because of the different events they perform in, and the much greater focus on upper body strength. So yeah, I do care somewhat. It's just that the USA women gymnasts tend to do a little better, and of course are more visually stimulating.
>> Anonymous
>>295808

I found Men's vault to be oddly compelling. I did a couple of "HOLY SHIT!" after a guy held himself in the air for ten seconds, did a couple of flips, then reheld the rings, and then did a triple axle to land perfectly.

OP here, glad to see some people with the same sentiments.

Really, it was the most entertaining events for me of the year. I mean, we all can run, just as not as fast as Bolt. We all can swim, just as not as fast as Phelps. Shit, I can make a 3 just like Kobe but just not as often. What I can't even begin to think of being able to do is a two and a half twist into a backflip on a beam the smaller than the width of a fucking Harry Potter book. Fuck.

But yeah, I'll be trying to check out World champs or whatever the fuck else. Have no idea if itll be on TV though. Since you've been watching since '96, how was the scoring different back then? Just less Chinese biased? lul
>> Anonymous
>>295832

The scoring has always been fucked up. Ask Paul Hamm four years ago, etc etc. It's just that in the past there was more evidence of corruption amongst judges, I'm sure we'll find out eventually about the judges this year.

If you want a real trip, go look up WHO the judges were for gymnastics this year. They're all from shitty countries who are never, ever, ever good at gymnastics. The perfect patsies for Chinese influence/threats.
>> Anonymous
The shit for brains judges and the terrible score system killed it a little for me. But I still came to love this sport.

I may even take some gymnastic class, I'm still young.
>> Anonymous
>>295832
>>295626

As the guy who made the scoring comment, I have to admit I really don't know what I was talking about. I was just having a knee-jerk reaction as for why all the routines looked like skill after skill. The 2000 and 1996 seemed somehow seemed to have more "soul."

Diving should have gotten more of a focus this year. Some of the dives we saw put the shit the gymnastics girls did to shame.

Watching the older olypics 90s and back, it looked the major emphasis was on how gracefully and accurately the gymnasts could preform. Not HOW MANY BAT SHIT INSANE STUNTS CAN I DO B4 I BRAKE MAI NECK
>> Anonymous
Tbh, I thought the mens gymnastics were far better. Especially pommel horse and rings. Parallel bars, to a lesser extent.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>295889

Hm, I haven't watched the older Olympics but it seemed like they still preferred grace in these Olympics.

Case-in-point the AA final. SJ kept getting deducted like crazy on each of her routines for reasons really unknown. The only thing I ever heard is "they don't like her leaps." Whereas Nastia with less difficult routines across the board compared to Shawn, except uneven bars, seemed to always score higher because of her more graceful appearance.

Which is fine I guess, probably the way it should be. Some of the things Shawn does on beam do look very neck-breaktastic.
>> Anonymous
I think its the way she approaches it. Shawn is a lot more "IMMA FUKKIN THROW MY WHOLE BODY INTO THIS MOVE". I think it's amazing, the level of power athleticism she has, but Nastia is more technical.
>> Anonymous
>>296014
Definitely. After seeing a great deal of them both, I think of Shawn and Nastia as the perfect examples of contrasting gymnastic styles.

Where Nastia appears as the paradigm of gracefulness and impeccable form, Shawn is an exemplar of power, precision, and derring-do (yes, derring-do).

Little as I really know about gymnastics on a technical level, I'd say that's a fair assessment. They're both incredible.

>>295910
I'm with you. Out of all the events (men's and women's), by far my favorite is the rings.

I didn't watch much of the men's. The women's gymnasts already have bigger muscles than me, didn't want more depression.

Best part of the olympics imo was the men's high bar when the american made it well known that he wanted a medal and he was going really big for it.

I bit my lip on almost every release move he did, and he got the silver, it was awesome.

My respect for male gymnasts went up that day.

I've been watching gymnastics since the 1992 olympics, so I didn't love it more than I thought i would. I loved it as much as I thought I would. Well, slightly less really. Back in the day the Russians/CCCP had much more screen time than the chingchangs, who are butt fucking ugly. I miss Svetlana Khorkina. how do i get a set of rings? can i hang them on a tree out back? i weigh over 200, but i'm built strong. i see these gymnasts do the iron cross and such and how much strength it takes, and it seems like something anyone could do if they trained enough.... then again i like my beer, pot, and food. how strong do you have to be to do an iron cross if you weigh 200 lbs?

Worlds are shown on television, they happen in 2009,2010, and 2011.

US Nationals are shown, they happen around April-June, depending on when Worlds/Olympics are

American Cup is sometimes shown as well, that happens before Nationals for the most part.

Pacific Rim happens every other year I think, so it wont be back until 2010 I think. They aired that one...
