Here's what Jim Rome had to say about the Rays today:

"The Rays are who we thought they were, not the guys who were trying to knock over the monster in Fenway. That's not where these guys live, they were built to do it with pitching, speed and defense, and it was all on Game 2 of the World Series. They don't wait for someone to pop a three runner, they play small ball, not long ball."

How on earth do you cover sports for a living and have to resort to making up (wrong) things about a team that's in the World Series because you know so little?
>> Anonymous
what did he say was wrong? They had superior pitching, aggressive baserunning, and superior defense (Baldelli's double play) than the Phils last night

Rome thinks B.J. Upton is a scrappy hitter. And that Evan Longoria is hot.

They are a power team. They were 4th in the league in home runs in a pitchers' park. I think 14 behind the fucking Texas Rangers.

They had a low batting average, high on-base percentage and a ton of home runs. That's an Earl Weaver team if I've ever seen one.

They were last in the league in sacrifice hits.

They're a progressive front office, and since when does a sabermetric, moneyball-esque front office support the notion of small ball?

SOOOOOO small ball.

What the fuck are you talking about? The Rays played small ball in Game 2 like he said. They're not some team who's going to jack home runs and run it up the scoreboard.

>resort to making up wrong things because you know so little

You're one of the many sad fools who probably got trolled by Rome. STEP YO GAME UP!

It's fine if he said that's how they won Game 2. It's not if he says that's the way the team normally plays.

Why does anyone ever take anything people on ESPN take seriously? The only people actually watching the game are the BBTN crew. Rome reads the box score, and goes from there.

But they are a small ball team. Only one player with 30 homeruns, only one player with 100 RBI's. Nobody hit over .300. They just don't have a dominant middle of the order holy shit kinda hitter, but together they hit the ball pretty good while being smart about running the bases and having great pitching to keep the games close.

That is a small ball team.

Jim Rome is the most helpless troll on earth. If he's talking about a boxing match where one guy knocks the other guy out, he'll call:

(a) The winner a thug
(b) The loser a pussy.
(c) The match rigged.
(d) The vegas line a scam.
(e) The sport a joke.
(f) "And I loved every minute of it."

And he'll do it all in 30 seconds too if its his "final burn."

>>428068

This.

The character Rome plays on TV is not the one he plays on the radio. And yes, they are characters. All sports commentators play characters. Wilbon, Kornheiser, Woody Page, etc.

What? He'll use the same segments from The Jungle in the morning for Jim Rome is Burning in the afternoon.

lmfao i hate that faggot

i hate the way he stands on the beginning of his lame show
his dumb mustache
his lame tan
his lame scripted show
his dick sucking to athletes

hes pathetic

No one listens to the Jungle for Rome most of the time. People listen for the emails, texts and phone calls. Its a reason why when Jay Mohr hosted ealier this year it was one of the best shows.
>> Anonymous
>>428151

Most of the phone calls sucks since people stutter, and fuck up what they're saying. Sure you'll get gems once in a while, but for the most part the calls are useless.

The best parts are the e-mails and Text where Rome can moderate it a bit better. Flow is important when you have 3 hours to fill.

If you're listening to Rome for in-depth sports analysis, you've really missed the point

Considering I've watched every Rays game for the last 3 years, and a large chunk of their games historically, I'd have to say.... you're all fucking retarded.

They are NOT a power team. They are NOT a "small ball" team.

They're a balanced team. That's what happens when you build your franchise around 5 tool players. They deliver in all aspects.

You all need to learn sports.

I wouldn't say the 5 tool aspect is why they're balanced. I think they're balanced because they have the essential skills spread across the lineup.

"Small ball" would be having a lot of strong bunters on the team. There's really only two good bunters in the lineup, Iwamura and Bartlett. But they're both very, very good at it. (Navarro is an excellent bunter, too.) There's really only one pure power hitter on the team, but a lot of high-OBP guys (Upton, Iwamura, Aybar). Nobody on the team is a below-average fielder, and most are quite a bit above-average. And the team speed has been written about enough already.

They're balanced because they've worked through drafts and trades to fix all the glaring deficiencies in the team. Right field is still a bit suspect, but only because Rocco Baldelli is dying of a mysterious disease.

>>428063
He clearly doesn't even do that.
>> Anonymous
>>428067
No, that is not a small ball team.

A team that was 4th in home runs and last in sacrifice hits, and a team with a very moneyball-esque front office, is not small ball.

>>428122
I listen to him on the radio a LOT. It's about the same. In fact, he repeats a lot of the same shit verbatim.

He's worse on the radio, though. The "takes" and dead air are awful.
>> Anonymous
>>428642
This is closer to the truth, but that whole "I watch the team" doesn't fly when there's an actual recorded record of what they do.
