Hi /sp/, I don't know much about sports, but I have a question. I'm hearing a lot of metaphors about "waiting for the shoe to drop" or "both shoes drop," and I'm seeing this in reference to football, hockey, a multitude of different sports. Could anyone tell me what that means? Thanks!

Waiting for something that could change the momentum of the game/match...

Does it have a literal connection? Like, somewhere in history, what did a literal shoe-dropping have to do with the tide of the match?
