I heard the Maple Leafs are moving to Alabama.

Dear self,

Don't take any more teams from ass-backwards Quebec. I wouldn't wish them on normal Canada, never mind me.

Quebec, Quebec is a small city it makes sense that they lost their team while the rest of the NHL kept making money

Toronto has decent teams in every American sport, Montreal is French so they're not gonna like any Anglo-American sport besides Hockey. Vancouver is Chinese so they might have a baseball team sooner or later because of how popular it is getting over there.

Every other Canadian city is too small to mention.

Calgary is bigger than Vancouver. Plus it's Canadian redneck western-seperatist central, perfect for a football franchise.
>> Anonymous
>>426737

If that's true than how come nobody has ever heard of Calgary while a few people here and there have heard of Vancouver

Is there a Canadian law keeping the NFL out, there are a few teams in the US in much smaller cities than Toronto and Montreal, etc.
>> Anonymous
>>426750
Because
A) people are fucking idiots.
B) the olympics (which makes no sense anyway since Calgary had the olympics too)
C) world expo a few years back
D) people are fucking idiots.

Since when does raw population equate to level of fame, anyway?

I don't know about a law keeping the NFL *OUT* (and I really don't think there is given that the NFL is occasionally being played in Toronto anyway, but I do believe there has been legislation put out in an attempt to keep the CFL alive should the NFL break into Toronto full-time.

Having a city with a large population ultimately means very little for the viability of a franchise. LA has proved that with the NFL. All that really matter are tv ratings and game attendance. That's why the NHL is so fucked up now, the Trashers play in Atlanta, which is a HUGE city, yet they can't get enough people interested in hockey to give away enough tickets to warrant a legitimate sellout. Edmonton by contrast is easily one of if not the smallest NHL city plus the smallest NHL arena, yet they always draw in great attendance.

Also, no offense, there really isn't anything to do in Calgary. I mean compared to Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver it's a completely forgettable experience, unless you work for an Oil company.

And actually, I agree. I grew up in Calgary and I fucking hated it. If you're someone who wants to pretend to be a cowboy and likes bandwagon hockey fans and conservative oil-rich assholes, it's just the place for you.

But is there really anything to do in, say, fucking Pittsburgh? Nobody ever goes 'nobody's ever heard of Pittsburgh"

Toronto Bills

Fuck, i didn't like you in the af2 goddamn

Pittsburgh is a dump.... kinda like Hamilton X 10, but they have a 70s franchise that actually has a bit of a fanbase... It's the sunbelt teams that are ruining hockey

Dallas is one of the most profitable teams and even the thrashers have higher attendance than Quebec or Hartford had
>> Anonymous
>>426946
Dallas is an exception... And Quebec was undone by the fact that they had the Canadians less than two hours away. Hartford Whalers I will not attempt to defend, but they did have Pat Verbeek.

What? Barely anybody even knows what baseball is in China. Unless you're talking about Taiwan.

I do however agree that Vancouver would be a good baseball market. Also, Seattle NEEDS a hockey team, I bet one would do well there, especially now that they lost the Sonics.

Fucking, I can't believe people talk about the NHL expanding to Vegas when there are far superior markets like that.

>>426950
Vancouver is lately focused more on getting the Whitecaps into MLS. Living here for a few years, I can't say I've heard any particular baseball buzz, especially with the Olympics at the forefront of anything sports-related.

I also think Seattle has the potential to be a good hockey market in the vacuum of the Sonics, but I don't know if they have an appropriate arena.

You know, except for that baseball franchise that lasted for a couple decades (RIP)

>Former Sonic Fred Brown announced plans this morning to develop a privately funded downtown arena for professional basketball and hockey in Seattle.

They might be getting an expansion basketball and hockey team.

Also, I feel a hockey team would do well in Milwaukee as well.

The Whalers had awesome attendance through the 80's and early 90's....it was Karmanos that killed the attendance...see, Hartford hockey fans enjoyed buying mini-season ticket packages, and they sold very well...Karmanos had it so the only packages that were available were full season ticket packages, plus he raised prices for regular single ticket seats.

Also, in the 90's, the liberal Connecticut government raised taxes and instituted many fees for corporations in Connecticut (which was once considered the Delaware of New England)...this scared many corporations away who moved down to Texas, Florida, Arizona, etc...in order to run their operations cheaply...working-class Connecticuters lost their jobs en masse, and Connecticut no longer was the corporate haven it was in the past...

The only teams we have here now are the Hartford Wolfpack and the Connecticut Huskies. I want my Whalers back!

The arena could only hold 15000 people, it is mathematically impossible to have awesome attendance, or even mediocre attendance
>> Anonymous
>>427014
15,000 wasnt to small at the time. From 1979-1997 alot of teams arenas were compairable in size (Toronto's Maple leaf gardens, Boston's Boston Garden, Quebecs' Quebec Coliseum, Dallas/Winnipeg/San Jose/Pheonix/Vancouver also has small arenas)

So for the time it wasnt a tiny arena, now it would be the smallest in the nhl but only by a thousand or so. A new arena would be needed but the one they had was good at the time and they did sell well.

I really wish that Canada would get a couple more hockey teams, but I also don't want to give up any of the Southern clubs that I (being I guess the only person in all of America) really love.

Maybe we can give them of the Phoenix Coyotes and the Florida Panthers? Seriously though I'm probably the only advocate for Southern hockey on Earth...

The CFL was awesome in its prime during the 1990s. Gizmo Williams, Pinball Clemons, fucking, Doug Flutie ...

If they combined NFL talent with CFL rules, that would be orgasmic.
