Existentialfag here.

Do you ever wonder what's the point of everything? What's the point of sports? Your team wins, woohoo! Your team loses, boohoo! But, honestly, what's the point? It's not like these teams actually serve any purpose in our lives, right? Unless you are an employee of these sports corporations (GOOD FOR YOU!), does sports really affect our lives?

Hell, does life even have a point? Is life meaningless? Or is the meaning of life to create your own meaning? Or does "God" give us meaning? If he/she/it does, then is that truly freedom?

Its good to feel you are a part of something greater then yourself. It starts with entertainment, and you soon find that if you put a little of yourself into a team you begin to enjoy that feeling.

The wins are blissful, and while the losses sting you feel as if your own little cosmos stings with you. You feel a part of something, camaraderie with your fellow fan and an appreciation from the team you give your soul too. It is these great feelings you receive when you follow a team that make you continue doing it, a personal reward.

The risk of asking the question of meaning is that you end up searching in the wrong place for answers. It is hard to explain, meaning itself is difficult to grasp, what has value to one is nothing to another. Enjoy life as it comes, the big questions will be answered in due time, deal with those problems when they become problems.

I enjoy watching sports, and that's all I need to know. If that makes me simple or ignorant or whatever, so be it. Unlike existentialists, I don't believe that the point of life is to sit around moping. Life is what you make of it.

>Unlike existentialists.
>Life is what you make of it.

Isn't that the main point of existentialism?

It's because of primitive tribal instinct. The players on the team are fighting under your tribe's banner, which means you win if they win.

I think it's to enjoy the game of the sport or gain/develop physical strength, mental strength, and various skills through practicing the sport. The enjoyment aspect is obviously for satisfaction while the development aspect is to improve aspects about yourself in the hopes of improving the quality of your life and protecting the things that are dear to you.

We are sports fans because of our natural urges to conquer and our inherent xenophobia. And what that other guy said.

OP is a butthurt Dallas-area sports fan who's trying to rationalize his teams sucking with broader philosophical questions to ease his pain.

I'll snap you back to reality- The Cowbois suck, the Mavs suck, the Rangers have always sucked, and the Stars suck

something matters because you believe it matters

this is how it works with everything

sports, video games, etc...none of that is ever pointless unless you believe it is pointless

nothing has inherit value of any kind other than what you give it
