What is the toughest sport? Anonymous
Pic related, according to an ESPN study ranking 60 sports in terms of difficulty:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills

Thoughts? I totally agree with boxing and hockey and #1-2 but baseball is too high and rowing is too low.

All and all not a bad attempt, but this is a problem:

>We identified 10 categories, or skills, that go into athleticism, and then asked our eight panelists to assign a number from 1 to 10 to the demands each sport makes of each of those 10 skills. By totalling and averaging their responses, we arrived at a degree-of-difficulty number for each sport on a 1 to 100 scale. That number places the difficulty of performing each sport in context with the other sports we rated.

I would have liked to see things like "Nerve" and "Flexibility" weighed less in the final total then things like "Endurance" and "Strength."

You don't normally score points for pre-game stretching.
>> Anonymous
>>170805

I was about to say that, but then I guess this list is more about difficulty in a physical sense, and not difficulty in a 'how hard it is to actually be good at the sport' sense.

honestly hand/eye coordination should have a much greater weight that most anything else. it's pretty fundamental to many, many sports.

beyond that, everyone at espn are morons and that list is retarded

I thought war was the national sport there.

they under-rated hockey in a few things. IMO it should be atleast an 8 in both speed and agility and atleast a 7 in nerve.

other than that, i pretty much agree with the list.

Durability higher in soccer and basketball than lacrosse, martial arts, and wrestling (soccer is lower than wrestling but basketball higher) = LOLWUT

Rugby: Excitement at a breakneck pace
Football: Excitement at a slower pace but with better hits.

nothing. catching balls and running to the other end of the field while pumping yourself full of steroids isn't hard at all.

I think they sorta messed up with marking Football, because they kind of marked it like you were an Offensive Lineman who is also a Running Back and sometimes a QB.

Also, I think they were pretty acurate about Baseball. Ask any athelete, hitting a Baseball is one of the hardest things ever to do, and to play Baseball you need intense Hand-Eye Coordination, above average power, and moderate agility and speed, which is exactly what ESPN gave them.
>> Anonymous

>> Anonymous
>>171754basketball gains in strength to soccer. HOW. basketball is extremely overrated there.

Has never been inside the paint.

Soccer takes no strength whatsoever; in fact, strong players seem to get penalized, because blowing through anything other than the perfect tackle will net you a caution and scatter 3 opposing players like a tornado just touched down.

Even fighting for heading position is less about strength than agility.

meet adriano, roberto carlos, watch some long distance shots (hint hint: lot of strength), some good headers (hint again: strength), tackles, marking (oh boy strength again) and tell me how fucking pussies throwing balls in baskets with their hands (more skill than strength, alas) win by large points here
>> Anonymous
>>171771
Yeah exactly. The main reason for Kun Aguero's vast improvement this year if because he's bulked up and doesn't get barged off the ball easily.

You don't NEED to be at all strong (or fast, actually) to be a good player, but it helps a lot.
>> Anonymous

Haha. It takes real strength to bounce a ball of your head. Shit man I could kick a soccer ball from midfield into the net and I'm a scrawny fucking 19 year old. I COULDN'T, however, last 30 seconds in the paint against someone like KG or even Gasoft. Shaq, in his prime, would KILL any soccer player that came within a mile of his territory.

here. Actually I have played soccer in my sorry life, travel team kid until high school when I quit for football. I've actually played far less basketball than soccer, but when I did I usually played a rebounding power forward. Left defense in soccer, by the way.

Basketball is way more dependent on strength than soccer. Enjoy your idiocy.

>>171814Everyone who's bitching about baseball has never seen a slider.

Yes, well, you've probably never faced a penalty kick/shot, hit a 400 yard drive, and so on. There's difficult shit in every sport.

Hitting a slider is tough on the hand/eye coordination, but we're talking about total athleticism here. Flying a fighter jet is tough on hand/eye coordination too, but that doesn't mean Johnny McTestPilot is a top athlete.

I once saw this one guy belch and cast off 40 yards low past a tree branch.

Such a raw display of complete-body athleticism leaves me no choice but to rank fishing as the third toughest sport, ahead of a lot of others I've never played and behind two more I sort of follow.
