Anon, explain to me why a salary cap is in place for the NBA, and yet the NBA champion team is 20 million over the cap. I don't understand.

cause the lakers suck, having way too many uncircumsized men who are scared of black people, on the court,

The cap is more of a guideline than an actual limit. If they go over that amount, they pay a luxury tax.

IIRC, The Knicks currently pay the highest luxury tax in the NBA.

NBA: soft salary cap, team is allowed to surpass the cap without penalty in some situations (like resigning home talent), and team is fined for money paid over the cap, but is not disqualified from playing games
NHL and NFL: hard cap, teams may not exceed the cap for any reason, or they may be disqualified from games
MLB: no cap lol, just a luxury tax for teams spending way above the mean

NHL's minimum cap (roughly 32 mil) can barely be matched by about 1/3 of th teams in the league. i'm talking phoenix, nashville, florida, etc. bettman's sunshine belt teams.

Teams over the cap also have the extra "salary-matching" trade restriction.

Hockey's hard cap makes sense, more fair distribution of the talent, even to the "sunbelt" teams. Don't forget the West. We don't deserve teams, either :P
Not to mention lots of hockey teams lose money every year sad to say.

Going over the cap does not mean you have to pay luxury tax, it only means you cannot sign any free agent aside from using the mid-level ex ception(5.6mil/year), the bi-annual exception(1.2mil/year), and 1 year contracts with minimum salary. The intention of the cap is so teams cannot sign someone for a godly amount unless they have cleared their cap space by having contracts that expires. Currently, the salary cap is 55.6 million, and the threshold before you have to pay tax is 67.8 million. As long as you don't hit that mark, then you can be over the cap and still not pay the tax.
