Different levels of club.
Most kids who make it take this route.
Join the local side when your about 6 or something, no one is really any good.
Keep playing for a couple of years. If you're lucky you develop well and you and your team progress and become one of top in the county or even the country. Scouts watch your team. This is still when your about 11 years old. Anywhere from 11 to 17 scouts will come watch your sunday league team and if they think you have alot of potential they will offer you a youth contract at the professional club.
You know the rest, if your good you get a professional contract and become pro.
I know a guy who plays for my home towns major club's youth academy and played for England U-16's. Been at the youth academy for 1-2 years I think.
