Saves are just slightly above wins in the hierarchy of quality ways to measure a pitcher.

K-Rod's not better than Papelbon, he's not better than Rivera, and he's not better than Nathan. He does not deserve to be in the Cy Young discussion if the only possible case for him is centered around what his team has given him to work with rather than what he himself has done.

5 blown saves.

Cy Young winner?

I lol'd.

Ok,
I don't think K-Rod should win the Cy Young. In fact, if anything, closers deserve the Cy Young less than ever before. They throw less total innings, only play in late game situations, and often get "saves" when in reality they didn't save the game, and are usually in a situation with little pressure. Saves are only big if they are getting their team out of a jam, and thus honestly "saving" the game.

Really, he would be 3rd or 4th on my list for the AL Cy Young Award. Who would put ahead of him?
1. Cliff Lee. Most wins + best ERA = Best pitcher. Also, 2nd best WHIP (Walks + Hits per innings pitched) in the AL.
2. Roy Halladay. Has a lot of losses, but this is due to his teams offense being a pile of shit. He is throwing more than anyone else in baseball, yet still is among the best in ERA, and is 3rd in WHIP in the AL
3. Mike Mussina. Yea, that's right, Mike Mussina. Isn't it funny how this guy is the one guy who has actually delivered for the Yankees all season? The guy everyone wanted to be traded last year, or before this season? Here he is, throwing the best stuff of his career, which is saying something. If he keeps pitching well AND the Yankees somehow make the postseason, he should get the nod.

However, to be fair, the same should go for Halladay (if that SOMEHOW happens)

K-Rod doesn't throw for many innings, has a mediocre WHIP and ERA for a reliever, and just is not as valuable as a great starter is. The fact that I am an Angelsfag and I am saying this shows how not-so-incredible K-Rod is.

And that's all I have to say. Any questions?

still better than Paps.

Seriously Paps is the best closer in baseball? In what world are you living in?

He lives in a world where 18-1 doesn't exist

Sporting News Reliever of the Year award
formerly known as Fireman of the Year.

that's the only award he deserves to get

Angelsfag here. Yeah I think K-Rod is a good pitcher, but I hate him because of how cocky he is. He shows guys up all the time, and his follow through is shit. If someone hits a dribbler up the middle or to the right side, he can't get it because of that faggot crouch he does. He doesn't deserve to showboat the way he does because he cracks like an egg under pressure.

Personally I think Percival was a classier guy when he was our closer

Nah, he'll be playing in the AL East next year. We'll let the Yankees pay for his surgery.

ITT: Some people look only at how many saves he has and go "Omg Cy Young!", while the smart people actually look at his mediocre stats.

truth. im a hardcore angelfag and i cringe every time they send him out there to close it out. he's 10x worse in non-save situations as well.

Smart-ass! I've got two things to tell you. One: I don't like you. I see you every week in this /sp/. I don't like you shiftless layabouts. You're one of those fucking mallrat kids. You don't come to the /sp/ to talk or work. You hang out and act like you fucking live here. Well, I have no respect for people with no talking agenda.

Paps ISN'T the best closer in baseball, that's for sure. Hell, I might not even put him in the top 5.
>>297465
No, I am. I happen to be going down south (I live in Central California, 5 hours from Anaheim) to see them play the Rangers this weekend. If you are wondering why I would be seeing them play the Rangers, all I can say is "Who cares? Josh Hamilton is hitting home runs."

That wasn't me who posted that. I at least try to give evidence with most of my posts. This one is an exception, but at least I am admitting that.

That from Mallrats "Smart-ass ex-boyfriend! I've got two things to tell you. One: I don't like you. I see you every week in this mall. I don't like you shiftless layabouts. Jonathan Papelbon not one of the top 5 I can't agree with.
But who are your top 5?
>> Kilgamayan !2BklmILFiE
Nathan is the best closer in baseball. He has an ERA+ of 420. That's fucking INSANE.

Rivera has an ERA+ of 277, Papelbon has an ERA+ of 258. K-Rod's ERA+ is 165. Cliff Lee has a better ERA+ than that and he's a fucking starter.

The other AL closers with better ERA+es are Joakim Soria (232) and Bobby Jenks (264). K-Rod's not even Top 5 despite being the only one to have less IP than appearances.

If K-Rod is a legit Cy Young contender, why isn't Brad Lidge the front runner for the NL Cy Young. 31 straight saves and counting.

Because the NL sucks.

Nathan ERA 0.98 SV% 92% K/BB 4.69 WHIP .89 BA .185

Rivera ERA 1.53 SV% 97% K/BB 11.17 WHIP .72 BA .175

It adjusts a pitcher's ERA according to the pitcher's ballpark.

I'm glad you asked.
1. Rivera
2. K-Rod
3. Joe Nathan
4. Joakim Soria. That's right, you heard me. If this guy was on the Sox, he would likely outrank Nathan and K-Rod.
5. Bobby Jenks.

Yea, I know the last two will be controversial, but I still would rather have any of those 5 then JP.

As a Twins fan its nice to see Nathan getting some respect for once.
