Saito ERA last year was 1.85, this year he's at 1.75ERA with 5 saves and 12Ks.

Izzy has always been an overrated closer. he has a penchant for allowing too many baserunners.

LaRussa's hard-on for this guy would have kept the cards from winning the World Series .
I thank God he got hurt and Tony "had" to use Wainwright.

I would take Saito over any of the big-name closers currently in baseball. He's deadly effective and incredibly consistent.

There is no good reason why Wood should be the closer over Marmol.

Saito already is the best closer in the NL, he's just desperately underpaid due to his age(he's 38 this year), and the mileage on him. He's basically the Japanese version of Slomtz

I may or may not agree with this statement, depending on whether or not you consider Joe Nathan a "big name closer".

Did you even watch the game? It was 3-3 when Gagne came in. He didn't even get a blown save just a loss.
>> Anonymous
>>94887

Nathan is probably the most underrated closer of the last decade.

As much as I love Saito, the answer here has to be K-Rod. Don't forget that the Angels had that crazy games-won-when-leading-after-8 streak going.
>> Anonymous
>>94934

K-Rod is an asset to be sure, but he seems to waver back and forth between spectacular and simply solid.

Are you fucking kidding me? Do you even know who I am? Jesus Christ for over ten years I've been shutting everything down. The only reason people in New York are able to sleep at night is my fucking right shoulder.

Call me when you throw 34+ consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason.

"Oh ya," you say, "but that is like... in the past... you've been in the league for going on 13 years."

Shut your goddamn mouth when you're talking to me. I haven't allowed a run in 15 innings and I can STILL throw any one of my 3 fastballs by the best hitters in the game.

The only time people talk about me is on the rare occasion I fuck up.

If the battle is between today's Saito and the Rivera of a couple years ago, then of course I'd take Rivera. But as-of-today, I'd rather haave Saito.
>> Anonymous
>>95027
Rivera is way past his sell-by date. The best closers the past few years have been Putz and Papelbon.

That loud cheer you heard yesterday was Cardinal Nation rising up when they heard Gagne was coming into the game.

Didn't they pull Iggy from the Cards closer spot?
