in 1959, harvey haddix pitched TWELVE perfect innings. however, his team was unable to score. his opponent, lew burdette, pitched a shutout himself, through 13 innings (as the 'home' pitcher). haddix came out for the bottom of the 13th, and allowed one hit, a home run (before the homer, there were an error and intentional walk ruining the perfect game - but the no-hitter was still alive).
probably the best-pitched game of all time, between the two starters.
