I'm sure this has been posted before, but that doesn't mean we can't discuss it. Is there a racism problem in European soccer? Obviously, the report has an American bias, but one can't dispute the fact that people like LeBron James or Ryan Howard or LaDanian Tomlinson don't get this kind of treatment here in the US. As an USAfag, I'm interested to know what the Eurofags of /sp/ think.

That's because there are no NBA arenas in Alabama.

College football is huge in Alabama...I'd be willing to bet that even at a U of Alabama game against Auburn, you wouldn't see racism against a black player on the opposing team.

So it's okay for a player to do the Nazi/facist salute? And he gets an endorsement deal out of it, it seems?

well, there is a huge problem in italy, with clubs like Lazio and all. And I don't know how bad it is in spain. But England, Germany and France are pretty "clean". Sure, you have a few idiots chanting racists stuff, but it's not a very vocal group over there.

Anyone have a link of people throwing bananas on the field when an African team was playing some other team?

And read How Soccer Explains the World for some truly savage fucks

well a lot of football players are black. every team has a lot of them. So if you're racist to the other team, you're racist to your own team.

Well you could say that it's their right to be far right-wing... to have facist believes. And I don't think there are more fascists Europe than in America (percent).. Europe might be a more open... And why its shown on the terraces, I think its got to do with history... at least in Italy political ideology go hand in hand with the teams, fans and ultras. For example in Rome, Lazio right-wing, Roma left-wing. And it's been that way for a long time (i guess). And as it is... I'm not 100% sure.. But racism and fascism isnt illegal, im not saying its right, but its not illegal.

One of the most overtly racist clubs in Europe actually is in Britain....the club that likes to describe itself as the essence of Britishness....Glasgow Rangers FC. We all know of the long history of anti-cathlocism, but their support routinely runs afoul of domestic and international authorities with their audaciously racist antics.

some examples

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umOEp7lCgoI - Nakamura ate my dog chant

racist banner in lisbon - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jESq6lxha_U&feature=related

song about irish potato famine - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYNDWKdKBLU&feature=related

I could go on and on, but you all get the picture. the fucked up thing is that aside from all of this evidence, NOTHING is ever done to punish rangers. aside from when UEFA steps in during international competitions' but look at their disgraceful behavior in barcelona this year....terrible....

thats why rangers are scotland's shame
>> Anonymous

im a from the US, and a huge fan of the national team. i always liked watching beasley 8 years ago....but when he signed for rangers....he is just another hun. i'll still support him as a player for the US national team, and perhaps when he realizes he is playing for a misanthropic club.

but just because they field a few black players does not mean that rangers are not a racist organization, as their outright fascist and xenophobic ways are as entrenched as the game is in scotland

It's unfair to expect a player to not sign with a certain club based on moral problems of the club itself.

Maybe that's the best club out there that actually wanted him. Maybe they offered him the most money out of all teams offering.

I've been a Yankees fan all my life, but if I was to ever hit it big in the MLB and the Red Sox offered me the most money to sign with them, or they were the only team that actually wanted me, i'd do it without hesitation.

its also unfair to make a false analogy between american baseball and scottish football. you dont see the history of ireland constantly played out in a heated rivalry. you dont see emergency wards fill up with stabbings and other injuries. you dont see red sox fans cutting yankee fans throats for simply wearing their clubs jersey. you dont have a club that generation after generation ingrains into their support the rabid sectarianism and racism that you see with rangers fc.

there is simply nothing like this in america....nothing
>> Anonymous
>>96675

but money or a player's personal reputation is worth a lot more to him than the ethical problems that root a certain club.

If they offered me the money they did for him as well as the chance to make it big in big name soccer, i'd sign with Rangers FC on the spot.

Don't give me shit about how your coach sucked or how you were using "2nd tier" players.

The argument here isn't that the NBA is the best league in the world or that the US has the best players. That's all true. Just don't try and act like the US would dominate Football if people there cared about it when you can't even win American sports competitions.

There used to be a lot of racism in baseball, the Yankees and the Red Sox took their time hiring black players, probably because of their largely Irish and Italian management and fanbase. And the Philies refused to play against the Dodgers after they hired Jackie Robinson.

John Rocker never looks like a decent guy. Ever.

Spain is where Eto'o walked off the field with the ball because he got tired of monkey chants and people throwing bananas at him and other African players. What's worse is that supporters will do it even at their own players--UEFA's done a piss poor job of handling things like this--PSG seems to have been the first team to actually get serious punishment for racist banners, and even that wasn't enough imho. Teams need to be docked points and play to empty stadiums before people take racism at matches seriously.

well, I can't speak for all of europe, but in germany the officials can get really butthurt, that can go from a monetary penalty to forced relegation if your fans fuck up too hard (didn't happen in the upper leagues up to now though). We had the same problem 20 years ago, combined with a huge hooligan problem. The clubs started anti-violence and anti-racism campaigns, the league started a strict punishment system for clubs and fans and the security in the stadiums got renewed. As a result the upper leagues got pretty much cleansed from racism and violence, but it's still alive in the lower leagues.

Wait, what? Europeans trying to make this into a "Our athletes are better than yours"? Are you retarded? It's the Americans who actually think they could beat the Europeans at their own game. Read the thread.

And the vast majority of Europeans aren't racist. The top players from around the world all come to play in Europe regardless of race. The European leagues are more racially diverse than the ones in the US are.

As someone else said earlier, this was mostly a smear story by ESPN that failed miserably when the WC got high ratings in the US AND there were no racial incidents in the entire tournament even though ESPN tried to make it look like it was a huge problem FIFA would be facing.

PROTIP : PSG's "punishment" is hardly a punishment.

Also, it's honestly crazy that the club is punished for what its fans do... Imagine if I go to a game at a neutral venue between the Raiders and the 49ers and I (with perhaps others) display a nazi flag? Should either club be punished, or should I be punished?

In PSG's case, that's the problem : it was a game organised by the league authority (LFP) in a neutral venue. PSG wasn't in control of crowd checks or anything related to security. So why are they going to be punished?

Football needs to punish the real fuckers. Not the clubs. The EPL has managed to turn away from racism and hooliganism by banning people who fuck up from stadia accross the country. Perhaps that's the way to go in countries like Spain and Italy once they get some balls.
