these threads pop up every now and again DO YOU KNOW SHIT ABOUT NFL HISTORY

dallas was in there temporarily when they were an expansion team back in the day and they kept them mainly due to the redskins rivalry, but now all of the other teams in the east are rivals of Dallas

three things;

1) A purely geographic alignment in the NFL would look a lot like this;

NORTHEAST
Buffalo, New England, NY Jets, NY Giants

EAST
Baltimore, Carolina, Philadelphia, Washington

SOUTHEAST
Atlanta, Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa Bay

SOUTH
Dallas, Houston, New Orleans, Tennessee

GREAT LAKES
Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh

MIDWEST
Chicago, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Minnesota

WEST
Arizona, Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis

WEST COAST
Oakland, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle

2) before you start crying like a bitch about the divisions above and how this team should go somewhere else, you fucking try the whole list yourself, you complete fucking tool

3) who gives a fuck about geographic divisions? leave it the way it is, with Dallas in the NFC East

The Redskins vs. Cowboys rivalry existed long before this division and thus Dallas was kept in the division so the two teams could play every year.

When it comes to proper divisions, the NBA does a real good job at organizing its teams with no overlap. Even with OKC's faggotry, it still fits quite well within the "Northwest" division.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
The NHL also does a decent job with its divisions, though Bettman lazily stole the names and designs of his divisions from the NBA despite the previous version being kickass. The northeast is a bit too packed, though.

Also Atlanta is further west than Detroit, but whatever.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
Now with the NFL we introduce the concept of non-geographical conferences. As a result, things look more like a clusterfuck than before. At least the two North divisions don't overlap with other divisions.

Also the AFC South is a wishbone.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
Lastly, we look at baseball's divisional map. West divisions overlap, Central divisions overlap, East divisions overlap.

Overall, its not as fucked up as the NFL's divisional map, but it still serves to notice that non-geographical conferences/leagues don't really help with travel costs, if nothing else.

Also the AL West is a whale humping/flattening the mermaid that is the NL West.

>DO YOU KNOW SHIT ABOUT NFL HISTORY

If they wanted to get all historic and shit, they should of kept three fucking divisions. "What about the expansion"? you ask. What he fuck about it. There's no law saying you can't have more than 5 teams in a division. The NHL did it. The NL Central has 6. What's the fucking problem.

What about the Rams? Why try to preserve that history.. THEY HAVE NO FUCKING HISTORY! MOVE THEM TO THE FUCKING SOUTH! What "rivalry" are they trying to preserve?

This is what>>394363looks like in map form.

It's an interesting concept. I suppose they'd have to adopt an east/west split for conferences, like the NBA.

One potential drawback is that fans wouldn't really have back-up teams. For instance, maybe a Texans fan also roots for the Cowboys sometimes because his own team perpetually blows. In this setup, that probably would not occur due to them being in the same division.

The other weird thing that the map points out is that Kentucky is like the center of the NFL universe. I never noticed that before, and perhaps nobody else cares, but I found it a little interesting.

>>394363
I don't think anyone cares until all of a sudden, one division has 4 great teams. This year isn't one of those years though. NFC East only has 3.

Cowboys
Giants
Redskins

Eagles, you need to bench McNabb, then we'll talk.

BACK ON TOPIC I think worrying about geographic anomalies in sports is kinda a waste of time

Who cares that the Cowboys are in the East? It's better that they play the Eagles, Giants, and Redskins, all teams that they hate and who hate them.

The NFC East, the NFC North, the AFC East, the AFC North, and the AFC West are all great divisions, with teams that love to hate each other. I'm sure Jets fans don't care that the Dolphins are all the way in Miami. I imagine Raiders fans would rather hate the Broncos all the way in Denver than the 49ers just across the bay.
>> Anonymous
>>395370

Because it matters that fans can't follow their team.

Imagine if Fulham fans couldn't afford to travel to Chelsea! That would be a tragedy for the world of genuinely competitive real men's sport.
>> Anonymous
It is a price we pay for having an enormous country. Eurofags wonder why public transportation is so underdeveloped here; it's because the infrastructure would have to be XBOXHUEG and thus prohibitively costly.
>> Anonymous
>>395408

If only you were divided up into say, 50 different states.
>> Phillyfag
>>395394

I know that Eagles fans (and those who can afford to regularly buy tickets are the richer fans who can afford this) prefer the more distant road opponents so they can plan vacations around it. Travel companies even plan such road trips. A Philadelphia at Miami game four years ago sold (if I recall correctly) over 20,000 seats to such travel plans.

Watching games against southern nice-vacation-weather teams, you'll often see Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Philadelphia, Giants fans in the stands. NFL fans are eager to travel. It's certainly not unheard of for Eagles fans to go down to Dallas, and vice versa.

>>395414

You're missing the point. For a frame of reference, the entire UK could fit inside the state of Michigan. That means someone could travel to any EPL match he desired within a matter of hours. We in this country do not currently enjoy that convenience.

The bigger cities do have their own public transportation. I know that both New York and Boston have subways, and Chicago has the el-train.

Hence why Yankees-Mets games are commonly referred to as the "Subway Series".
