As a 49erfag I hate Vernon Davis's attitude, he is like a Pacman Jones, just without hitting strippers. I hope they get rid of his ass this offseason.

Vernon Davis really is an idiot, though. He deserved to get his ass thrown out, so it wasn't uncalled for, IMO.

Before you ask any questions, I want to say this: No. 1 is I apologize. Apologize for the start. I don’t really…

It’s like this: Today was good for me. It was good for me because sometimes you take a step back and you look at it and you think, ‘Hey, you know what? I’m here, it’s on, we’re going to make it work. They’re working hard, they’re doing this, they’re doing that. We’re going to go out there and it’s going to change right now.’

It will change. But I’m not trying to tell you something, it’s going to change—it’s not like that.

But I want you to understand where I’m coming from: It will change. And it will change because they want it to change. Not because of me. It will change because they want to be champions.

But right now we’ve got to figure out the formula, our formula. Our formula is this: We go out, we hit people in the mouth, No. 1.

No. 2, we’re not a charity. We cannot give them the game. That’s No. 2. And No. 3 is we execute, from the very start of the game to the very end of the game. That did not happen.

I do not apologize about… You know what? I’ll go ahead and take some questions.

-Q: No, you’re going good.

-SINGLETARY: No, no, you don’t want me to go much further. Go ahead, ask your questions.

-Q: What happened between you and Vernon Davis?
-SINGLETARY: Vernon… It was something that I told everybody at the very beginning of the week. I would not tolerate players that think it’s about them when it’s about the team.

And we cannot make… we cannot make decisions that cost the team. And then come off the sideline and it’s non-chalant. No. You know what? This is how I believe, OK? I’m from the old school.

I believe this: I would rather play with 10 people and get penalized all the way until we’ve got to do something else. Rather than play with 11 when I know that right now that person is not sold out to be a part of this team. It is more about them than it is about the team.

Cannot play with them. Cannot win with them. Cannot coach with them. Can’t do it. I want winners. I want people that want to win.
>> Anonymous
-Q: What did you tell Vernon before he left the field?

-SINGLETARY: I told him that he would do a better job for us right now taking a shower and coming back and watching the game than to go out on the field. Simple as that.

-Q: Is Vernon still your starting tight end?

-SINGLETARY: Well, we’ve got to think about that.

-Q: Did Vernon talk to you after the benching?

-SINGLETARY: He wanted to talk to me. I told him he did not want to talk to me. I said, ‘I assure you, you do not want to talk to me right now.’

-Q: Did he argue with you on the sidelines?

-SINGLETARY: He just said, ‘What? What?’ What?

-Q: Who is your starting QB?

-SINGLETARY: We’ve got to think about that, too.

-Q: Was it your decision or Mike Martz’s to make the QB change from O’Sullivan to Hill?

-SINGLETARY: It was my decision.
>> Anonymous
-Q: Did Martz disagree with you about it?

-SINGLETARY: Well, I think Mike knows me enough right now going through this week that we did not talk about it.

-Q: Why did you make the QB change?

-SINGLETARY: I thought that… it’s just one of those situations where you feel like you’re going in the game and you want the best opportunity to win.

You want the guy that, if a quarterback is going and he’s not playing well, he’s just not in that rhythm… after a while his teammates can get frustrated. And some coaches can get frustrated.

Rather than going there, just say, ‘You know what, let’s make a change and we’ll re-visit it later.’

I think right now Shaun Hill today in that situation will give us a better chance of winning.

-Q: How did Shaun Hill play?

-SINGLETARY: I thought one of the things that I asked the guys early in the week was to manage the game. I talked to the quarterbacks early in the week: All I’m asking you to do is manage the game. You don’t have to go out and win the game. Just manage the game.

If we’re going to win, we’ve got special teams, we’ve got defense, we’ve got other parts of the offense that can click and work. Give us a chance. Let’s just go out there and manage the game and let’s go.

CLICK CLACK VERNON - CLICK CLACK
>> Anonymous
-Q: Is this game an indication that this will be tougher than you thought?

-SINGLETARY: I’ll put it this way: If something like this is going to happen, happen now. And not on national television. We’ve got between now and that time, when we play Arizona, to correct some things. And it’s not so much the play, but it’s more of a mindset.

And still having a chance to find out who wants to win. Who really wants to win. Sometimes you have guys that it’s been so long that we’ve been unsuccessful that sometimes it’s like a bad relationship. You don’t know when it’s going to turn again. And after a while, you become a part of the problem rather than the solution.

I want guys that are solution-oriented. Starting with myself. I’m not going to try and make something work when it doesn’t fit. And that’s really the bottom line to me.

-Q: Why take JT O’Sullivan out with less than a minute in the half instead of just making the change at halftime?

-SINGLETARY: Because Mike Martz said, ‘Mike, if we’re going to take him out. Instead of waiting ‘til the second half, why don’t we allow him to get in, get in a rhythm, get a feel for it, so that in the second half he’s not just fresh off the bench.’
>> Anonymous
-Q: Can you explain your defense?

-SINGLETARY: All of a sudden, boom, they come out in a split backfield, one of the linebackers missed a guy underneath. Fullback runs for a touchdown. It happens again. Quarterback scrambles around, fullback, touchdown.

You know what? We cannot play like that. I just talked to the player and he said, ‘Coach, I promise you, it’ll never happen again.’ I know that. But it happened today.

We will get it. We’ll deal with it.

-Q: Why did you go for it on that 4th-and-6 instead of trying the FG? That’s when JT threw the pick-six.

-SINGLETARY: I turned to Mike (Martz) and I said, ‘Mike what do you think?’ He said, ‘I’d like to go for it.’ Of course, I knew he’d say ‘I’d like to go for it.’

I looked in his eyes, I said, ‘Let’s go. Let’s go.’ We’ve got these coordinators and they’re doing a good job. Greg’s over there, racking his brain trying to find the right calls. Sometimes it’s not the calls, it’s the way it’s executed.

Mike Martz, I’m very blessed to have him as a coordinator. Guy that you can turn to, been there, done that. And when he tells me, ‘Mike, I want to go for it.’ Sometimes I might say no. Probably most of the time. But at that time I felt, you know what? I want to support what he feels. Let’s go.

-Q: Seemed like you were in a 3-4 defense more than 4-3 today. Are you more of a 3-4 now?

-SINGLETARY: It was just a matter… if you would break down the film, you’d see that we played both. We were 3-4, we were in ‘over.’ Just depended on what personnel they were in.

We’re going to be somewhat of a paradox for a little bit until we figure it out.

-Q: What was your message to the team after the game?

-SINGLETARY: I’m going to say this about that: I’ve always been a firm believer… it’s nothing like it was anything magical or anything. In all honesty, you probably do not want to hear it.

It was just sharing my heart with them. It’s as simple as that. I just believe that things we talk about in the locker room should stay there.

We did not play anywhere near where I felt we could have played. And rather than go into the, ‘Well, see, this happened here and that guy was out of place.’ I’m not going through that.

I’m just going to apologize and just ask you guys… Just keep watching. That’s all I can tell you. And we’ll go from there. Thank you very much.

The problem is that the 49ers have no QBs at all. Alex Smith is hurt, and Martz gave the job to J.T. O'Sullivan, who has no bussiness playing in the NFL.

Mike Nolan was fire unfairly, if you think back to the 05 season that team was fucking horrible, they just drafted Alex Smith. Their Offensive line was a joke, they have shit receivers, and their running back was Kevin Barlow.... KEVIN FUCKING BARLOW..... I really think that USC from that year could really beat the 49ers.

06 season was somewhat better, they have a new offensive coordinator, but guess what he split just after one year, you don't do that shit when you got a young quarterback is developing, thats how they become busts. Frank Gore came out of no where, defense got better, things were looking up and bam came the 07 season. It was like the 05 season again, Alex Smith gets injured got a faggot named Trent Dilfer who is QBing, Frank Gore is injury, their big free agent signing played average. Oh yeah don't forget that the 49ers drafted their fucking first round pick to the Patriots so now they don't have a top 10 pick.

—-MIKE SINGLETARY Monday press conference/

Hello. Go right ahead.

-Q: Have you spoken with Vernon Davis today?

-SINGLETARY: I have not. I will. I’m not in a rush to do it. But we’ll talk today.

-Q: You reacted so swiftly to Vernon’s actions, it seemed like you were almost ready to react . Is this something that had been building up for you in regards to Vernon?

-SINGLETARY: You know, my experiences with Vernon… it’s just a matter of… I talked to Vernon a couple times.

There’s been a few outbursts, whether it be offense, defensive situations. Whether it be a game situation. You just say, you know what? I’m going to talk to him to help him understand you can’t do that.

Vernon and I had a conversation just last week and I was talking to him about how he needs to step up and I’m really looking for him to be a leader and really take it to the next level in his play.

And he sat there and said, ‘I’m ready Coach. I’m ready to go and ready to do it.’
>> Anonymous
So we get into the game situation and the very thing I was just talking about a couple days ago, you do. And not only that, but come off the sideline and it’s like, ‘What’s the problem?’

It just hit me wrong. One of the biggest things we talk about on this team is respect. I’m really big on respect. I don’t mean that you have to be a Marine or you have to be in the Army or anything like that. That’s not where I’m going with this.

I also believe in really understanding that we all have to respect what we’re trying to do and the team is the biggest thing that we have to pull together. If we’re going to have success, and we will, the team has to be in tact.

And in order for that to happen, it starts with respect. Because if I respect… I may not like you as a person or whatever, but if I respect you, I’m going to listen to you and maybe we can exchange ideas and we can get better.

But if I don’t respect you, I’m going to have a difficult time having a relationship with you, a working relationship with you, where we can exchange ideas and we can get better and we can talk about the things in the future that we aspire to do together.

To me, that’s what the team is all about.

It’s not about Vernon. What happened, if it were anyone, I don’t care who it was, if they had done what he did, to me, it crossed the line. And to him, I’m sure it’s not a big deal, but he crossed the line.

And so I just did what I would normally do. If I had to do it over again, I’d do it over again. Hopefully it wouldn’t happen again. But I just feel that going forward, if we’re trying to build the team, then everyone has to understand that no one is above the team, including myself.
>> Anonymous
-Q: What will it take for Vernon to get back into your good graces?

-SINGLETARY: It’s not that he’s out of my good graces. Not at all. I don’t have a doghouse. I don’t have one of those things where I’m not going to talk to him…

It’s not like that at all. To me, he just crossed the line and he needs to understand it. We’ll have a conversation, a very short conversation about it. I just want him to understand that it can’t happen. It can’t happen.

I won’t play games with a doghouse and I’m not talking to him. No, I won’t do that.

-Q: What are you doing at QB?

-SINGLETARY: Coach Martz and I looked at the film together this morning and pointed out some things about both quarterbacks. And we’re going to continue to have conversations about that. We have some time to really reflect and decide how we want to look at it going forward.

We’ll make the right decision. Whatever’s best for the team, that’s what we’re going to do.
>> Anonymous
-Q: Martz has consistently said that JTO is the best QB. Was he wrong?

-SINGLETARY: I won’t say that he was wrong at all. When you look at what JT has and the capabilities and the arm strength and all of those things, you’d say, ‘Hey, maybe that guy gives us the best chance to win.’

But you know as well as I do, when you look around the league, there are guys that are very, very talented. They can throw the right ball, they can throw every pass, they can throw every route, they’re very talented, very smart, all these things. But they can’t play quarterback.

JT has done a good job, he’s just been inconsistent. Mike’s assessment, I think, was correct.

But I think sometimes you go back and you look at where’s the team, where is my quarterback situation, and we’ve got to make the right decisions to make the right fit. And I think right now, that’s what we’re talking about.

-Q: Would it be tough to force Hill on Martz?

-SINGLETARY: You know one of the things that I talked about yesterday in our conversation was, I don’t want to do anything to inhibit the relationship that Mike and I have coming out of the bye week and going into it.

So it’s not like I’m going to go in there and say, ‘Hey, this guy’s going to be the starter, like it or not. That’s the way it’s going to be.’ That’s not going to happen.

We’re going to come to a decision and it will be unanimous and we’ll go from there.
>> Anonymous
-Q: Do you think JT has managed the games well?

-SINGLETARY: You know what, I’ll put it this way: I mean, if he had done a good job of managing the games, then we wouldn’t be talking about what we’re talking about now.

I just think that JT sometimes, it can happen to a lot of quarterbacks, sometimes you get into a situation where you want to win, you want to make a play, you want to make things happen, and sometimes you do too much.

-Q: The fans cheered when JT came out, will it be tough to put him back in?

-SINGLETARY: All I know at this time is, the fans, just like you guys, as well as the coaches, as well as the players, it’s all about winning. And regardless of who’s out there, whether it’s JT, whether it’s Shaun Hill, if we win, all is forgiven and you go forward.

Maybe we come back from the bye week and he goes out there and they go, ‘Boo, boo, boo.’ And he throws a couple touchdowns and it’s like, ‘Go get ‘em JT!’ We all know how that works.

The most important thing right now is we come to a decision about what is best for the last half of this season, giving us a chance to get into the playoffs and fight for a spot.
>> Anonymous
-Q: Is Hill maybe less talented but a better game manager?

-SINGLETARY: I’ll put it this way, right now if… everybody had a list of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. You’d have Johnny Unitas on that list. You’d have Joe Montana on that list. You’d have some guys on that list, just to look at him, you’d go, ‘He plays what? In the NFL?’

I remember watching Joe many times, looking at him when we were at the Pro Bowl together. ‘I can’t believe this guy is the guy that’s beating us. I mean, he’s a small guy. You look at him, how can this guy beat us?’

But he was wearing our tails out every time we played him. And he didn’t have the greatest arm strength in the world. But Joe could manage the game and he could take the game where he could go.

So I look at the quarterback position. It’s kind of quirky. It’s kind of crazy how you try and figure it out. But you just need a football player. All the other stuff is for the scouts… you need a football player who can do whatever you need to do for the team to win. And to me, that’s what I mean about managing the game.

I don’t mean go in and throw two-yard outs, run the ball and then another two-yard out. I don’t mean that.

I mean, that quarterback has to be able to fit where we are right now, given what our defense can do, given what our special teams can do, looking at using all of the tools on that offense, what can we do? As a quarterback, he has to be able to figure that out, sort it out and make the most of all the tools that he has available to him.
>> Anonymous
-Q: You’ve made it clear that you want to be smash-mouth team. But does Martz’s offense fit that?

-SINGLETARY: When I say smash mouth, I want to be physical. And when I look… I was talking to Mike Martz about this the other day. I want to be physical football team. I don’t want to be a finesse, a cute football team. I want to be physical.

Now, do I want to do the other things? I love Mike Martz’s offense. I really do. But when you look at his offense and what that offense can do when you’ve got all of the components to it, they are physical. They can be physical. It can be a physical offense.

At the same time, they can get the ball in the air as well. To be able to get a balance—a balanced attack is what you need at different times of the game, given who you’re playing, the clock situation… that’s what you want to be able to have. That’s where we’re striving to get.
>> Anonymous
-Q: Do you have the roster for a physical team?

-SINGLETARY: There’s no doubt. There’s no doubt. Yes. I mean, I’m looking at the film and I’m looking at some of the plays that they’re making.

Offensively, the offensive line, I think yesterday, as I sat down this morning with Coach Martz, I thought Baas came in. I thought he did a great job of hitting people in the mouth. Wragge made some plays. And we’ve got some backups. We’ve got Jonas coming back, hopefully.

But we have some young guys, the kid Chilo from USC. So we’ve got some guys with a physical presence. I just know that as we continue to put it together, we’re going to have what we want. Is it going to be perfect? No. But I think we’ll have enough of the components in place where we can go forward this last half of the season.

-Q: You post-game press conference got a lot of attention–your volume and fervor. Is that going to be your normal approach?

-SINGLETARY: Maybe I’ll drink a little more water. Maybe I’ll breath a little bit. But I had a chance to talk to the players and coaches and I came in there… pretty much that’s kind of my personality.

I don’t talk a whole lot. But when I am talking, I do know what I feel and I do know what I want to say. And when I’m talking to you guys, I don’t ever want to come in there and be a philosopher and analytical, because that’s not what I am. What you see now, that is what I am. And that’s not going to change any time soon.
>> Anonymous
-Q: Is it tough to bring Vernon back from that?

-SINGLETARY: Well, he hasn’t gone anywhere. I just want to say this: Vernon is not a problem. Vernon is not a problem guy. Vernon just forgets sometimes that the team is more important. Vernon is not a guy that doesn’t come to practice.

You have to tell Vernon, ‘Vernon, that’s enough. Don’t hurt the guy, that’s your teammate.’ I mean, he works his tail off. You don’t have a problem with Vernon that way.

What you have a problem with every now and then is some of the decisions that he makes at crucial times. It’s, ‘Well, Vernon, what are you thinking? That’s not helping us here.’ Those are the kind of things… You have to be able to separate the two.

He is not a guy that’s a distraction on the team. Yesterday was somewhat of a distraction. But everybody knows Vernon. Everybody on the team, they know full well who Vernon is. I just did what I had to do so that he wouldn’t be so much of a distraction.

-Q: The penalty didn’t look very bad, do you take that into consideration?

-SINGLETARY: As a matter of fact, I saw the whole thing and I thought Vernon was kidding with the guy when he did it. But the referee called it. Another one of the things that I talked with the guys about, if the referees make a decision, it’s right…

It’s not, ‘Well, he didn’t do it hard.’ He did it. And they called it. So you live with it.
>> Anonymous
-Q: Just to clarify. When and if you say that some players are cancers, you’re not including Vernon on that list?

-SINGLETARY: I am not including Vernon on that list. No. Absolutely not.

-Q: There could be players on that list who were high picks or have a lot of money invested, do you have the authority to get rid of them?

-SINGLETARY: You know what? I want to answer that as carefully as I can. I want to do whatever it takes to make this team a championship team.

Once again, it is not about Mike Singletary and the authority that he has. ‘I don’t like this guy. I want him out of here. It’s either him or it’s me.’ I’m not like that. I want to do what is best for the team.

Now, do I have the authority? Yes, I do. But I also want to do what’s best for that young man. If there’s a young man that we have that may be misguided, I want to do all that I can to help him understand what we’re trying to build. Because it’s going to be special.

I want him to be here. I want him to be involved… If it doesn’t work, if all else fails, then we’ve go to make a decision.

But immediately, I’m just not going to tolerate anyone that is not respectful. I’m not going to tolerate anyone that’s taking away from the team. I’m not going to tolerate anyone that believes they’re above the team.

This is going to be a safe place. It’s going to be a great place to come and work. It’s going to be a clean place. And it’s really going to be something special.

I believe when it’s all said and done, the NFL will look at the 49ers as a team and just say, ‘Wow, they’re doing it right.’

-Q: Are Manusky and Tollner down on the field now instead of in the coaches’ box?

-SINGLETARY: The only difference in who we had on the field and who was in the box is Greg was down. That’s it.

-Q: What’s that book you carry?

-SINGLETARY: This book I record every conversation, every day, every minute of the day.

-Q: You’ll write about this talk?

-SINGLETARY: Yes. It reminds me. It sort of keeps me up on myself. Sometimes you say something, you sometimes you do something, whatever. To me, it’s just a reminder, just a flow of kind of where we are as a team, where I think we are as a team, where were we yesterday, where were we last week? That kind of thing. Just keep track of where I need to be.

It can be 10 times a day.
