NUKLEER !TXiEAKFyEY
Hello /po/
I got some four foot tall construction stilts at the pawn shop the other day, and I want to make a Gundam suit with fiberglass and epoxy resin., kinda like those Master Chief suits. I need a pepakura model that would look good 10 feet tall or so.

Interesting...But why would you need the construction stilts for the costume? If it was 10 feet tall, how are you gonna manipulate the arms and hands? It'd probably be better if you just scaled the pep model to your own height.

I had just noticed that the legs on gundams tend to be disproportionately long compared to the rest of them.

Ah, now that you mention it, I see you're right.

You could check the 405th (The halo costuming site), I recall someone converting some 3d models into .pdos, not sure how far he progressed, though.
>> NUKLEER !TXiEAKFyEY
The only gundam I could find was in PDF format. Can I convert it to .pdo or something?

if you can't find a pdo gundam, do the following.

1. build pdf model
2. measure height of finished model
3 scale a reprint.
4. from what you learned by building the model you can make minor modifications to each section to fit your proportions
5. coat and finish model, or go back and remake it till you have a custom suit that fits comfortably.

build the first few out of cheap cardboard, then take those pieces and use their dimensions to build the final forms for the suit out of whatever you choose.
Thats what I'm going to do for the Hi-v when i get a chance to build the suit. model currently in progress.

Definitely build it out of cardboard. Then when you get it how you like, you can just coat the thing in Pam cooking spray and cake on the fiberglass. I've made quite a few consoles and interior trim for cars and boats using this method, and they turn out great.

Also, you really only need to mock up a basic frame with no details. Fiberglass is amazingly easy to mold and add to, so you should really just need to fit a fewof the main boxy-looking pieces and go from there. Good luck.

WHERE MY INTERNETS AT??!?!! It's already about a meter tall, so just scale that up to the 17.5m that Zaku stands and you'll be good....

Enjoy!

whoops, not quite yet. The left leg is 404ing. Well, 503ing to be exact. Can I just mirror the right leg?

there is only one problem with this idea. The gundams usually have long legs, yes we know. but if you use stilts, your only extending the bottom of your legs. the knees on gundams are still usually about halfway down the leg, so your knee would be too high if you were on stilts.

man you just ruined op plans!.

Well, just had an idea. How about I forget the stilts, and just stand on top of the foot pieces? so bottom of my foot = top of zaku foot

I didn't ruin them, i simply pointed out some of the design bumps that im going through for the gundam costume im designing. I'm working on both the Hi-v and the Infinite Freedom, and i have been trying to come up with ways to keep from losing proportions for weeks now. we humans just aren't built like gundams, lol.

That is one of the most likely things I've come up with, too. you could keep the costume at about 6-7 feet with that strategy and still get good results. Zaku is relatively easy to keep in shape, because its a bit fleshed out. It's much harder to do stuff like the Freedom because the waistline pinches in so far that to keep from making it look fat, you have to make it extremely tall.

I would just like to point out that you are going to have some fucking strong ankles for that.
>> SEBRET
>>170166
No shit, lol. the real problem is how to get the fake ankles to bend while still be stiff enough to keep me up
>> NUKLEER !TXiEAKFyEY
Hey, while on the subject, check out what I found.

Nah man. Gundam legs are disproportional. The calf part is probably 3x longer than the thigh, which would mean that stilts are a go
>> NUKLEER !TXiEAKFyEY
And now, the hardest decision of all:

what color should I do?
>> SEBRET
>>170262
which color stilts? or what color costume? if latter then red. if former than blue.
>> Anonymous
If you stand on the stilts and your ankles provide the articulation for the gundam's knee joint, you're golden.
>> Anonymous
>>170293

Then you run into problems for the foot joint, you'd have to make it completely immobile or risk losing your balance and falling.

Falling in one of those means at the least not being able to get up, at the worst broken bones and joints

>>170302
It's about the same risk as walking on the stilts without the costume, with a bit of added difficulty due to the bulkiness of the costume.
>> Anonymous
Not really, at least if you're on stilts alone you have your arms to use as counterbalances. In the suit, your movements are going to be restricted all over, causing locomotion to be quite difficult.
>> NUKLEER !TXiEAKFyEY
Well, i've pretty much decided that I'm going to save the stilts for the mall. They just add in too much complexity.

never mind, it works now.

whoa, did anyone else see the police gundams at MIT? A couple of guys did this and painted them black+ white and had red and blue strobes.

Shit it was cool, makes me want to go there. Too bad I won't get in.
