Cutting paper/cardstock with a sharp blade requires no real pressure, so you don't need to push down so hard that you would get a "groove" in your finger... Most accidents happen from using a blunt blade so you need to push down too hard, that's when you slip and cut yourself... Cutting paper (and whatever it is you have lying underneath) dulls the tip of the blade really fast. Regularly change your blade or sharpen it again.
