Straw stars are awesome. Requesting more stars.

from STRAWS? wow that has gotta be tough, i should think since they're hollow it would make folding them a lot harder than normal paper stars. oo;

You can't make them with paper, you'd need to roll it a LOT... dunno if you haven't noticed, but they're not the common 'knot' paper stars... they look more like a spiral.

In Japan they sell some special plastic, specific for this kind of star, but I can't find them... that's why people use straws.

The site died while I was trying to save the images (surprise!) so I just took a screencap which should suffice.

I make these occasionally, and if you use drinking straws you can't even finish the stars. I wasn't sure at first if I was making it right because they came out shitty, but when I got the correct straws for this they came out just like the ones in the pictures.

where do you get these no-drinking 'straws'?

Japanese gift shops in NYC... haven't seen any outside of there. You actually CAN make the stars out of a standard drinking straw, especially if it doesn't have a flex joint. It's just 100 times harder, and you can't get it as layered. You can also use ribbons; the thin type you see tied to balloons. If you can manage to keep the folds straight, they look pretty good... but you don't get the transparency effect.

would books kinokunya (think that's how it's spelled) have them? it's in nyc...

I always see these things in bubble tea places... would those big straws work without cutting them? The stuff I see in stores are a bit longer than them.

If the straws are extra long, simply stop repeating the last steps once you have a star you like, tuck the ends into previous folds, and cut off the excess. It's all a matter of taste.

I have instructions to make paper stars somewhere in my old magazine collection...

I don't think that it will work, the straw isn't long enough and it is too wide.
oh, and another site which has more detailed information on how to makes these.
