Question: Is there a way to take papercraft templates and turn them into sewing patterns?
>> Anonymous
I'm aware this is /po/, papercraft and origami, but I have multiple hobbies and was hoping to sew the same things I made papercrafts of.
>> Anonymous
OMG so cute!

I assume so but since fabric folds differently from paper the best way would probably still be rendering it in 3D and then using peparuka. Like, you'd have to add more complications because in papercraft there is no stuffing.

Well, I already have some models, and I was thinking that it'd be better to flatter out and use fewer faces, because you have to create each curve manually with paper, but with sewing when you stuff it, it poofs out a little bit (or a lot, depending on how much stuffng or what you're making).

Sorry, that was flatten*

i dont know if you have seen this yet, its like a plushie version of pepakura but instead of loading a 3d into it, you draw it.... i've tried it but dont like it

You can, somewhat, pic related. I've been sewing for a few months now and there are some things with cloth that you can't do with paper, likewise there are things you can do with paper that don't work with cloth. It's a learning process.
I've been making papercrafts for goodness knows how long and I've learned some important things about shapes and how they go together and such. I might scan up a few patterns and compare them to papercraft some time. It sounds like a fun project to help beginners. Does /po/ want?

Ugh. I hate that thing. I tinkered with it for a few weeks and it kept randomly closing or glitching up on me. If you can get it to work right, more power to ya.

Hahah, that steggie is adorable! Yes, I'd like to see comparisons. Also for box kitty, an alternative to making him more box-shaped in stuffie form is A. Don't stuff as much, or B. Round the edges inward. Do you know what I mean?
Pic related, it's what I mean. xD

I tried downloading the program; but I can't find the executable. Help?

Got it to work, sorry. Didn't work at first, beh.

..You really can't do much with this demon version, can't you? And there's no damn undo.

That cat was the very first of my boxes to make. I've learned from my mistakes and stuff them less now, so they're more of a box then a ball. I never really had much of a problem after that with keeping them box shaped but I might try that inward box shape and see how it turns out later on.
I'm a little busy now (pic) but when I get sick of sewing I'll scan up patterns and check 'em out.

Wow, that's a cute panda. xD What will it be when done? Plush, hat?
Right now I'm making a graduation wolf/husky for a friend. I tore apart a bear with musical innards and a graduation hat (lazy me) and am attaching them to the wolf, her favorite animal WHICH I CAN'T FIND ANYWHERE.
>> Stegorawrus
>>146319
That would be one tiny hat. Thats normal spool of thread. But it's ultimately going to end up a plush for a friend, it will take me awhile though. I don't have an actual pattern for this, I'm sort of "sculpting" it so to speak, one bit at a time.
I don't quite follow what you're doing... That sounds like some crazy abomination to me.

Turning a graduation bear and a normal wolf into a graduation wolf. I'll take pics later.

>>146325
Oh, I see what you mean now. My first thoughts were some creature part bear part wolf and part hat.... It was crazy.

I was actually just thinking about doing the same thing. I'd imagine that if you took a papercraft model and instead of folding anything you made each face a separate piece of felt or other material and just added a little extra for a seam it should work fine.
>> Anonymous
>>146328
Well, depending on the model; if its side were curved and made up of a bunch of faces, you wouldn't want to make each one a face, unless you were going for a patchwork look. Other than that, it'd probably work fine.

Who thinks this thread should continue, just for the sake of papercraft/sewing comparisons?

Here's the simplest. (Sorry for the crap image, it's all I can do) The top is my actual pattern in the green with a few duplicates to make it more similar to the papercraft. The papercraft is on the bottom with a few deletions to make it more similar to the pattern. A box is the simplest you cab get with papercraft to pattern, I think.

ps if you want to make your own pattern it's simply 2 inch by 2 inch squares with triangles on cardstock.

A quick note on fabric before I disappear again.
You can use felt if you wish but I don't recommend it. It's scratchy and hard and I don't know about you but I have problems finding felt in bulk.
BUT
I love polyester. It's soft and only slightly stretchy and if you find a good craft store you can buy the odd ends off of larger pieces that someone else bought for a way cheaper price. They're usually in bins somewhere near the table they cut fabric on. I got two large bags (Think the giant ass ones that people carry out of computer or toy stores) full of fabric for around $20 (At Michael's)!
Pic related, part of whats left of my fabric stash.

Is it possible to have OP's cat in papercraf?
>> Anonymous
>>146455
That's actually called polar fleece. Polyester is just what it's made of. If you go into a store asking for polyester they won't know what to show you- there are all kinds of fabric that are also made of polyester, but completely different. Like, some satins. Which would not work well at all for this sort of thing. Fleece is nice because it doesn't fray.

And the discounted leftover chunks are called remnants. :D They're usually hidden in a corner somewhere, so if you can't find them, that's what you need to ask for.
>> Stegorawrus
>>146485
Michael's had every last one of them labeled as polyester, so my bad. And when I go to craft stores they usually have the remnants near the table. I'm sure it varies from store to store, country, state, etc.
>> POdragon
>>146567
Y'know, I think they just label the remnants what the fabric is comprised of. Wal-marts, half the time, has 'unknown' written in the contents label of the remnants.

It's a good beginner's tutorial at http://www.usagitsukino.com/room/diy/droopingkitty.html
I made one with a few modifications, ears double sided and in the head instead of just being sewn on top, same for the tail. But over all it's nice. I'd add a pic but the ones I made I gave a way... I need to remember to take more pictures.
