I'm in a craft swap, and would like to send papercrafts to my partner, among other items. How can I insure that the papercrafts do not become crushed during shipping?

Pic semi-related. Theme of swap.

I would recommend sending the templates themselves. Of course, they would have to be assembled by your partner.

Quite a dilemma. Maybe getting a box that would leave lots of space, and then fill it with bubblewrap/peanuts/those air-bag things?

what I've done for some of the larger things I've made for friends/clients seems to work well enough-

all you have to do is put down a layer of packing peanuts or newspaper so that when the model sits on top, it's pretty much centered in the box. Then slowly spread peanuts/paper gently around it, making sure it fills in all the gaps.

a gigantic fragile sticker is always fun, but not required.. I've made my own since the little thing the post office provided didn't cut it. Papercrafts are surprisingly sturdy on their own, and the simple fact that the peanuts are preventing it from bouncing around the box and denting itself up from the impacts is enough to near guarantee it'll survive the mail.

The only risk here is being crushed by a MUCH larger package or the idiot neighbor kid using the box as a trampoline before the recipient gets home to take it in.

What if I sprayed them with some sort of sealant?

I painted glue onto mine before.

Krylon sealcoat works for me, (found with spraypaint section at walmart and such), but anything that would crush your item in shipment will crush it whether or not it's been sealed... it isn't solid steel, unfortunately :[

Maybe put it in a big glass jar to make sure it doesn't get crushed?

With those packing peanuts, depending on how intricate your model is, try crushing them up into smaller bits, that way they can fit tightly against the model and not jab into it as much... Will create quite a mess though.

Maybe put it in a smaller box, surrounded by packing peanuts in a larger box?

this, it's called a compression tube.

You stick it in a box that it barely fits in with a series of prongs/arms to hold it in place. Put this inside a larger box and fill the space between with packaging peanuts or what have you.

That's what I do when I ship non-flat origami.
