Oh yeh, in the U.S., the cartoon was called Star Blazers. It ran in the early 1980's
the plot runs thusly:
Earth is ravaged by an interstellar war with blue skinned folk. But some mysterious gal from a distant star signals earth telling them that they can save their planet if they come pick up some artifact. The old battlecruiser Yamato rests on the now dried up ocean floor where it sunk in WWII after being bombed to bits; but it has been refitted into a spaceship to handle the quest for this artifact. The aperture at the bow of the ship houses a badass energy weapon; and at the climax of many an episode, Captain Avatar issues the command (in his gravelly, dubbed voice), "Preepare to fire theee WAVE MOTION GUHHN!", whereupon they blow the crap out of that week's allotment of blue skinned pursuers.
