FUCK!!!! this thing is fucking hard as shit to build. Do you guys use some kind of special paper that holds better? I'm using regular 20lb paper and it's not exactly working for this.

go with at LEAST 24# paper. I like HP Bright White. Also, the glue you use counts, so I use quick drying LocTite or other similar superglues.

#24 paper, stupid question, but do they sell that at regular grocery stores, CVS, Wallgreens? And I've been using KrazyGlue after my first attempt with woodglue. Holy shit the super glue was the key for the smaller models i've tried but this thing is a 1:1 scale and the paper isn't matching up and it's starting to sag.
So #24 is that 24lb or something different?

Thanks

use 110 lb card stock cant go wrong

will that actually go through a regular printer? where can i get it other than the internets, any suggestions? Otherwise I'll just google it.

unless you're going small/complex, in which case it becomes near impossible to fold...
>> Anonymous !!jG6ZvayWdrD
You can pick it up at the office store for 10-14 bucks. As far as the folds I use a ruler and 2 pens, one black one red for the valley mountain folds, I run the pen down the line I want to fold about 3 or 4 times then the fold works great, then I score it with the plastic ruler to make the fold stiff.

o and yes it does go through a regular printer

nice info. I'll post a pic of the 20lb version when I finish in a few days. But I may go pick up some heavier paper and retry it.

Does that thick paper go through a printer alright? I don't see why it wouldn't.

Pic of about how far I've gotten

thanks for the quick info, before I could even ask!!

The handle got all squished and crunched when I shoved it into place. The two largest pieces (previous pic) didn't line up straight and I can't think of how to get it perfect without building them together rather than putting them together later

20% is really meant for cheap copy machines, just to get the job done. 24# is what you SHOULD use in your home printer. Thicker stuff like 110# will still go through you printer, just make sure to set the printing settings to 'heavy' in whatever you're printing with.

I'm using a lexmark P6250 for printing.

110 paper is like an 8.5 x 11 note card basically right? How thick is #24? roughly 1/4 the strength?
By the way, I'm a bit new at the whole papercraft gig. I made a companion cube a while ago then I saw these plans for the m41-a and nearly shit myself.

Thanks for the great help guys.
Here's the next thing I'm going to try to make, but I'll be getting better paper first
>> Anonymous !!jG6ZvayWdrD
its about as thick as an index card which makes paper crafting way easier. I am currently making a Halo Helm out of a pepakura model I found...somewhere like 25 peices per paper and 12 sheets...taking me forever just to cut them out.
>> Anonymous !!jG6ZvayWdrD
o one more thing I use super glue for the folds. Someone told me to use a glue stick but that sucked major balls. I get the cheapest super glue I can find you just have to watch out for stringy stuff from the glue drying to fast.

yeah, I figured that out after my first model. I used woodglue and I had to wait like 4 hours after each piece to do the next. I've tried a few different superglues and I'm going to stick with the old fashion tiny squeeze bottle. I just tried some brush style superglue and it dried before I could put the brush down.

This next models going to a beast to cut out
>> Anonymous !!jG6ZvayWdrD
yea I had that problem to, with the glue...a friend just told me they sell some that is like fingernail polish has a brush in it!!

that's the stuff I just bought. It ran out twice as fast as regular superglue and I wasted more because it would dry before I could put two things together. I suggest staying with the old school superglues and avoid the wattered down brush ones. It also soaked into the paper and left like an oil spot after it dried, leaving the end model least asthetically pleasing (minus the saging from shit paper)

i use rubber cement, it's drying speed is about a minute or 3. it was included in one of those car model kits.

yeah, I get superglue to dry in about 10 seconds if I squeeze it together. The only problem with that is that my fingers get stuck to the paper and now I can't feel the keyboard under my hands becuase all my fingers are tipped with a thin nearly irremovable layer of hardened glue.

side note: lava soap is available at nearly any grocery store and it works amazingly well at getting superglue off your hands
>> Anonymous
I use Elmer's wood glue. It works great unless you gob it on thick.
>> Anonymous !!jG6ZvayWdrD
so the brush superglue is watered down good to know...been using the tube kind since I started. I use rubbing alcohol to get it off my fingers. Also I sometimes use a paint brush to brush the glue around.

I hear that. I'm going out today to see if Publix doesn't have some #24 paper and if they don't i'll go to office depot tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the help!

sorry guys, I've been too busy to get any further on this beast. I'll see if I can't get my camera up and working when I get some more time on my hands.
