3DMF to Pepakura Anonymous
Does anyone know how to convert a 3DMF file so that Pepakura can open it- WITHOUT losing textures? I was using version 3.x of 3D Object Converter, and although it converted geometry correctly, textures were lost. Any help?

Pic semi-related- that game's models are in 3DMF format.

Holy shit, I loved that game

Yes, the pic's from Nanosaur. Very well made game, lots of fun.

It's part of the reason I want to convert 3DMF- I'd love to make a papercraft of the player model. Let's face it, it doesn't get much better than a raptor with a jetpack and arm cannon. :D

I even tried Okino's PolyTrans- no luck. I wonder if there's something weird with the mapping used by Pangea Software. It does seem to grab plain colors though, something 3D Object Converter refused to do.

Perhaps my best option is to just extract the textures from the 3DMF (they're embedded), convert the model to a more common format, and then reapply the texture using Blender or Gmax.

NANOSAUR
good times with that game, and Bugdom.

did you try 3D Ripper DX?

Interesting program- thanks for the heads-up. This won't work with the old Mac OS 9 version of Nanosaur (duh) but I think I might be able to get ahold of the PC port- but it might use too old a version of DirectX.

There's also OGLE for OpenGL games (link from 3D Ripper DX): http://ogle.eyebeamresearch.org/

This does open up some new possibilities- perhaps Crysis papercrafts? XD

Thanks PMF.

Nanosaur, holy fucking shit, I loved that game.
Either way, as far as I can remember, most of the Pangea games share the same model format. A week's worth of studying it should probably do it. I'll look into the model files as soon as I get home and see if I can get anything.

If not, I'll just resort to something like the 3D Super Ripper thing people keep talking about or just do a Nanosaur craft from scratch. Goddamn I love the game.

The 3DMF files are just in the game's data folder. The problem is in converting the files. 3D Object Converter and PolyTrans both can convert the geometry, but neither will convert image textures.

Doesn't seem much of a problem to re-map the textures.
Unless you mean it doesn't decompress the textures AT ALL.

The only textures that are extracted- and only by PolyTrans- are the plain colors- the red mouth interior and the pink crystal thing on the gun. The only way to extract the textures (afaik) is to use 3DMF Mapper, a Pangea Software in-house tool they released. Luckily, I had downloaded that years ago before they removed it from their site, and I also have an old clamshell iBook so I can still run OS 9 and use it. I might start a new thread on this so I can post what I've got. From looking at the geometry, though, it needs to be modified before really being possible for papercraft.

Could you post one of the original files, plus one with the extracted texture?
I have written small programs before to convert e.g. Pepakura (v1 only, though) .pdo to Metasequoia .mqo files.
As long as the file is readable as text, it should be possible.
>> OP
3DMF comes in both text and binary formats- Nanosaur's models are all in binary format. I'm guessing that's the only way to have the textures embedded. From reading on Okino's site about their PolyTrans 3DMF importer, it seems like it's a bitch to work with. But if you want to look at it, here's an RS link:

That's so cool, glad to see someone who remembers all this Pangea hullabaloo. Iirc they released the Nanosaur Source Code too..?

Yeah, they did- that was all a long time ago (for me, anyway).

I'm finishing up another papercraft right now, and then I'll start on the Nanosaur model. Unless you'd rather do it?

No, not really. I've got some other plans for the weekend, unfortunately I don't think I'll find the time to start a craft...
I'll be glad to help though, if you run into any problems.
