Manny Calavera Anonymous
Dear /po:

Instead of bitching about it for the umphteenth time, I'd like to design a papercraft of Manuel Calavera. What would be the best way to go about doing this?
>> Nonymous
Rip a model from the game, put it in a 3d modeler, then use the PepaKura designer to make it all.. papery. :P (Should check out the site, I think theres a tourt there)
>> Nonymous
Or you could... y'know... draw it in mspaint to get the nice straight lines, print it out, trial and error your way to a model like some people do.

Sounds like a plan, my first thought actually. Actually doing that would be another thing entirely I bet.
>> Nonymous
Post your progress too, I love Manny. (I love Dia De Los Muertos too)
>> Anonymous
Thanks for the support. I just reinstalled Grim Fandango and shall now begin to study the shape of Manny's head. I think I'll go with the Reaper outfit first, since it looks the simplest.
>> Nonymous
You're welcome, and I happily await the postings :D (I thought it was so cute when he went back to his business suit, all the stuff he had to do)

As you requested. :D

Profile shots and a first draft: I noticed the incline was a bit too steep, so I cut that a bit (by the red lines). Now just the other bits and I'll have the shape of the head in a bag.

Yay!

*Bouncybouncy* I'm all exciiited!

Um, is anyone else? :D
>> Nonymous
I dunno o.o
>> Anonymous
The Reaper outfit looks like it would be the easiest to model, but I'd definitely like to see Manny in his white tux. Classy!

>>20563
How do you rip a model from the game?
>> Nonymous
Sometimes the character models are stored as seperate files... I dunno if that's the case in this game, but sometimes people can take the models out, and put them into 3d modeling programs.

That's what I would indeed like to know, would save me a lot of headache

Here's how far I've gotten so far, template next to it. Try it out for yourself and see if you could mess around with it, I'm calling it quits as far as tonight is concerned.

Maybe I'm overthinking is, etching out a template. Maybe I just oughta focus on the individual pieces.
>> Nonymous
Looks good to me so far. I may work on one myself, and have it be my first self-designed paper model.

Race you to it. >:3

Git me some good pics of him, as I don't have the CDs on hand, yah?

Dude! I've been thinking about how to make a paper Manny too! I got the .obj and textures ripped from the demo. But I dont know how to put them together.
I put manny in pepakura but couldnt texure him cuse of uv something so heres what I got for you. Took a screen cap of pepa. I havent tested it yet and youll have to draw on his face. :(
>> Anonymous
Texturing should be done in a 3D modelling program, BEFORE importing the model in Pepakura: in designing papercrafts, Pepakura is only the last step, not the second one after ripping the model from the game. You'll have to do a whole lot of editing on the 3D model first or else the papercraft will be impossible to build: texturing, reducing the number of polygons etc.
Also, when you finally do get to Pepakura: you should tell the program to cut the model up in easy-to-build-pieces. This head for instance, would be easier to build in two pieces instead of this big one piece.

Dude! You are my new god!
I'm going to try putting this together right now.

Um...how are you supposed to fold this again?
>> Paperingman
     File :-(, x)
Oh, wait, there we go.

I'd say this was a fairly functional one, but I had a whole lot of difficulty attaching the upper and lower pieces together (as you can tell with the crevace), so if that could be resolved, that'd be grand. Also, textures would have made the folding easier.

Ay, chihuahua!

Nice going!

Mmm... Seems you guys have pwned me, seems I'll have to stick with the memes and hakos. -Fail-

re: character files....
I bought a Hello Kitty game for my little sister, and I was wondering what the file types for the characters would be, so I can try to make some papercraft Hello Kitty/Sanrio characters for her.
Are they just regular picture files, or are they something else?
I know that someone was looking for Hello Kitty & My Melody papercrafts before, plus people are always looking for cute things to give their girlfriends, so maybe this would be suitable.
>> Nonymous
If its a 3d game, pop the CD into your comp and browse around it. I'm no comp expert, so I won't be much help.

You did it! thats great! If you want the .obj files and texture download scumm revisited and the Grim Fandango Web demo. Then you can rip just about any file from the game. http://scumm.mixnmojo.com/?page=utils#scummrev
>> Paperingman
Now all we practically needs is the, uh, rest. :D

/r/ a rapidshare of the .objs so I can work on them myself
>> xzooma
Ok so here is a link to the zip. I added 3ds and asc versions along with the obj. dont know if they work tho.

I've been looking for a .3ds version of Manny for what feels like forever and you just casually provide one. This is too awesome for words.

I love you

This is why /po/ is awesome.

*Humps xzooma in a friendly way* WHEE FOR WE!

Will this do?

Gigantic amounts of kudos, fellow /po/phile! Testing immediately...

Uh, I appear to be having a little trouble...

To make things easier, I lowered the poly count on his face. (his nose is now a bump) But then I have no idea what Im doing. So heres another zip of Manny with original geometry and the flat face ready for pepakura!
If I knew how to model I would make the bottom of his lower jaw flat so thw whole skull could stand up with a weight inside.

I'm thinking we could add a neck and a bit of his body and make a bust out of it. Possibly.
>> Anonymous
Why isn't this stickied yet? Everyone should be bending over backwards to make a real live--uh, dead--Manuel Calavera.
>> Paperingman
I don't think anybody's going to be completely satisfied until we (meaning you) do a Guybrush, lol. :)
>> xzooma
     File :-(, x)
lolz Pap. We need a real modeler unless you want a blockheaded Guybrush.
I do like your idea of a bust, shouldnt be hard. Just need to figure out how to make shapes in 3ds...
So how did you do on that last skull? Think there is a better way of folding Manny?
>> Paperingman
I only had trouble with the bulge in the front (lol) because it wasn't lining up properly, nor did it even look like the Manny I played as in the game. I was rather thinking about exporting Guybrush's character model from Escape, rather, but that might turn out to be a bit too much folding again.
