Modular Origami? Anonymous
There was a posting a little while ago about some guy making a beautiful black and white menger cube out of sonobe units...does anyone remember the links that he referenced? I wanted to try and make one and some other modular origami in the near future.

I was going to try this one, which seemed a little easier. http://nedbatchelder.com/text/cardcube.html

Yeah, but the only problem that I have with the business cards is that they leave these ugly looking tabs...also, if anyone has a pic of the black and white menger cube that was posted as well, that would be awesome.

It's a box.

that site is quite useful in terms of modular stuff, the PHiZZ unit (link on that page) is hella easy, and really quick to make things with. I've got a couple dodecahedrons around here made from that, as well as some other shapes made from a square version of that unit.

I'm currently making a 3 depth menger sponge out of 1/16 pieces of 3 X 5 index cards.

NICE. I really like that. I hope you complete yours before I complete mine. Mine is a depth 2, and due to other interests, it has been under construction since fall 2001.

However, note the fact that the sides are smooth on mine. You can use another unit to "plate" one side the menger cube unit (one menger cube is six units, one plated cube is 12 units). It makes for a much prettier, sturdier finished piece.

Edit1:
Tumbo, it would take a crapton of units to plate yours, and you may have already gone too far without it. It would be difficult to try to plate what you have already done.

Edit2: I'm using 4ths of index cards, incase anyone wanted a comparison to Tumbo.

Anyone have any information about making menger cubes out of sonobe modules, as opposed to business cards?

Hey! That was me. Here are instructions. But I'm still hunting for the link to the site with the variation that had a couple extra folds.

FOUND IT! ^^ok there's the link that shows the variation with the extra folds. I don't remember exactly how I got my black/white pattern but it was basically this. Just play around with it for a bit and you'll get it. They're very fun! good luck!

Thanks thepacz. My only question now is--did you make your menger cube by making several sonobe cubes and attaching them together, or did you simply make the whole menger sponge all at once? Also, can you re-post the picture of your cool menger cube again?

Yeah i decided early on that i was not going to tile the inside but i do plan to do the outside, possible do paintings or other artwork on the outside so that it looks amazing. :D

Btw i'm just over one month into creation and 20% done, cutting 50 notecards a night (800 flaps) and folding them at school (win

Here you go. The way I made it was as a single Menger cube... so at each straight piece between the corners, you'll have modules that don't bend at all. It might take a few tries to get the configuration in your head (took me a while) but once you're on a roll, it's easy. Good luck! Have fun :)

does anyone know how to make the Sierpinski Triangle (3D preferably)

How do you hold them together, just tape? I'm new at papercraft and this looked like fun so I thought I'd try it.

The structure of both Sonobe modules and contacts cards modules makes it so that it just holds together thanks to the folds and tabs.

that looks really big.
how long, on average, does it take to make one?
i might test my skill

Arg. I've tried replicating the menger cube for a few days now, with no success. I just can't get the right coloration with my sonobe modules, and I haven't made any headway towards constructing a stable menger cube. Any tips/advice?

So, making Menger's Sponges is all the rave with kids these days. If you don't make one you're square...

Ironically enough, that's exactly why I haven't finished working on it.
