Here's something to consider as far as safety... I learned this in architecture in JC. For cutting, it is best to use plastic drafting triangles instead of metal rulers. Yes, metal won't get marred if you hit it with a blade, but the more serious issue is if you skip over the edge of the ruler. If it's plastic, the blade will dig in and stop. In metal, it will skip over the surface and very likely slice your finger to the bone. I have had this happen and the plastic stopped the blade. Had I been using metal, I'd likely have needed stitches. Thanks to my architecture instructor!
Oh, and we all know to keep a sharp blade. Dull blades require more force, and if you slip you're going to cut yourself worse.
