New Model Coming Soon! TLHarrell
From "The Last Starfighter" I bring you a Gunstar! 3D modeling is done, some parts unfolded. Just need to work on texturing and other minor details (lots of them).

it looks cool, but for sumthing that simple looking the engines er whatever are too round.
basically if i'm gunna make that model i don't want to waste hours just cutting and fitting the engines because they are so round therefore more tabs.

however don't get me wrong it is a nice model i just think that the engines will take a very disproportionate amount of time to make relative to the body

nice though
keep up the good and original work

There's quite a bit of tough shaping on this one. Note the cockpits. Engines aren't all that bad. I'm gonna limit the number of tabs a bit, so there's not 50,000 per part to cut out. And, since I'm laying it out in CAD, parts fit tolerance will be very high compared to most models you've done. I was working on a Tydirium Shuttle, had the 1 piece skin on my test model wrap perfectly around the interior bulkheads, bent at exactly the right locations. Same will be on this. The engines are mostly a series of cones, but they will be scored into small triangles as seen in the pic. Score lines will be barely visible on final print, so they shouldn't be visible on the final model. This is certainly no unfolded skin of a 3D model either. It's built up in a sensible way, with interior parts that help align and form the outside.

What you think of the subject? Anybody want this as bad as I do?

AAAaaahhh! White model! Hey Anon, wanna do a test build when I get the parts flattened?

Here's a shot of the actual ship render that I'm using as reference.

wow, that's awesome. That's not my model actually, I found it while googling gunstar. I probably wouldn't be the best to do a test build, my skills are a bit lacking. Thanks for the offer and keep up the good work.

Anybody have or know of a good mottled metallic texture that I can drop in behind the CAD linework to use for the major part of the body? I figured I'd underlay it as a .jpg and do the rest of the detailing and color work in CAD. Or is somebody a whiz with GIMP and can walk me through creating a texture similar to my reference pic?
>> TLHarrell
OP here. Still looking around for a good metallic texture that I can use for under the CAD linework on this model. What I need is something in the bluish grey color range, with some variation in color, kind of patchy looking. Preference for seamless texture file, but I can make so by mirroring later on. Can anybody find, or make a suitable texture? This should be pretty easy, but Google fails me, and I epically fail with GIMP.

DAD!!!!

Sweet! Metallic texture for the win! That'll definitely work.

BTW: I've got the main body unfolded and am adding tabs and starting on a test fit. A few details left to go and the body will be complete. (That's the hardest part and the only one-off pieces there... the rest goes faster due to multiples.)
