It's true, if you're making a card house and you lick the ends of the cards it last longer.

But is there really not made a template for making a tommy gun? it's like one of the most famous weapons ever...

Well if you know of a first person shooter that uses a tommygun maybe you can rip the 3D model. You'll still have to a lot of preperation work to make it suitable for papercraft.
If you want to make one from scratch, I suggest SketchUp.
After you found/made a suited 3D model, you can use Pepakura Designer to unfold it.
