I don't know much about 3-D modeling, and I was wondering if someone would make a papercraft strandbeest?

I've been designing one in SU after the last few movies...

I think my theory is rather close to actually working.

Can you transfer the .skp to a .obj?

Any options you need checked?

Only current selection: I'm guessing you want to export your entire model, so don't check that one.
Triangulate all faces: triangular polygons are the basis of all 3D models, sometimes software can use quads or even more, Sketchup only "hides" that it uses triangles, so your model already is made out of triangles so you don't need to check this, but if it doesn't work, try it anyway.
Two sided faces: if you made two sided faces, fix it, because for papercraft, you can't use them. ;) Fix your model so it doesn't have two sided faces, and don't check this option.
Export edges, I was under the impression if it doesn't always export edges, there's nothing to export?? That's basically your model, right? The edges between the cornerpoints? Dunno exactly, try without, if it doesn't export anything, check it.

Texture maps: Never hurts to have it checked. People have reported problems with Sketchup models, textures and Pepakura, but I don't know what caused their problems. Not this though. But you should just check it standard (dunno why they give you the choice...)

Swap YZ coordinates. Many 3D models and their textures are actually mirrored. This fixes that. Try it with the option checked, without it, and see what happens. Also, if you forgot to check this option, it's just a matter of flipping the image texture (jpeg, bmp, png, tga whatever) in MS Paint and you can also fix it. So no big deal.
My advice: just try the options and see what happens. Takes you an hour at most and you'll forever know exactly what YOUR preferences are. ;)

I don't really understand the design, so I can't really give you any tips on that, but as far as unfolding/templating goes:
After clicking unfold in Pepakura, you can right click in the unfolded view to get some extra options: moving the tabs, making them bigger/smaller, cutting parts, joining them in a more logical way. Play with the options a bit and find out what each ones does, then just use logic, imagine as if you were building it and fix any trouble spots you foresee.
Of course actually testbuilding it is a great method for finding trouble spots. Then you can fix them, try again, maybe you discover some more, then you can fix it again and so on until you're satisfied.

Yes, you have to prepare the models first.
It's kind of an abstract tip, i know. But what I learned so far is that pepakura doesnt really have a way besides guessing.

You need to look at the basics of the model and try to figure out what the best way is to put it together.

I'd say, group the static trangle parts together.
the and an open cube in the center and attach the 2 parts that translate the circular movement of the center wheels into walking.

I broke it down like this, This should translate to Pepakura well as a build able part. I don't think the X form it sturdy enough
It probably needs to be tube like

Tbh, I think most, if not all edges need to be converted to cylindrical parts for sturdiness.
