I just made this using SketchUp and Pepakura. Not all that exciting I know, but that's because I found SketchUp so damn hard to use.

Any tips to make it easier or simpler alternative programs?

Another pic from a different angle AND a subtle way to bump the thread ;)

Haha, that's cool, can you post the template?

Remember, this IS a wordsafe board.

Here you go.

I'm not exactly sure what those extra lines are there for, and I couldn't figure out how to rotate the template on the page so it's a tad small.

Dunno what those extra lines are exactly either (probably some extra ultra-thin parts from the 3D model that you don't really need; junk parts from not modelling absolutely perfectly (computers detect every tiny mistake). But it doesn't really matter on this one, you can build it and you're still learning, so no harm done.
Rotating and other stuff in Pepakura: http://www.ericksmodels.com/paper/step6.html has some tips (old version of Pepakura). Just right click on the development window (unfolded template) and try out all the functions once; learning by trial and error.
I find Sketchup the easiest program for 3D modelling, but because it's so easy, it's not the best to do organic shapes and such. I think if you practice using it, you'll learn it quickly enough.

you probably exported it to .3ds didn't you?

Nope, .kmz because Pepakura couldn't 'see' any other formats when I was trying to import.

Cheers.
