The Disney Experience Oscaron
Anyone liking these detailed Disney papercrafts may want to grab them now.

Due to some chinese company on Alibaba.com selling his models, Trader Sam has been forced to charge for some of his models and make some pay only. May be a time in the future that he makes them all pay models.

FYI.

BTW.

Here is his Flickr site showing nice photos of some of his work (current and prototype) as well as some of the ref shots he uses.

I thought the "pay-option" was just for when you don't want to download the parts yourself, but when you want him to ship a cd-ROM with the parts to you.

BTW: here's Trader's Sam website: http://www.disneyexperience.com/models/model_store.html

And you can see that you can pay for the Disney Castle, but also just download the parts: http://www.disneyexperience.com/models/castle_model.html

I don't get this part either:
1. Your FREE models are being sold by some pirate.
2. So you decide to SELL your models instead of making them free? What good would that do??????

If you're mad at the pirate, and want to thwart him, keeping your models FREE is the best thing you can! Since they were already free, you're not loosing money (since you weren't making any?) and if people know they can get the models for FREE, they wouldn't PAY for them at the pirate... Now if you charge people too, just like the pirate, they wouldn't care wether they buy it from you or the pirate...
If this is true, then I suspect Trader Sam was kicking himself when he saw how popular his work is and wished he would've charged money for them instead of giving them for free, and now is using this pirate thing as an excuse to do so now...
But like I said: it's a stupid idea to think that charging money for your free models will stop a pirate like this... I don't get that logic!!! Because it isn't logic!!!

Like all GOOD papercraft designers, Trader Sam always builds a test-version of the papercraft before releasing it. That way he can correct any mistakes BEFORE other people build it, not AFTER...
He BURNS these beta-versions when he releases the final version and has no use for them anymore. I find that a shame really; I always keep my beta versions. But since this is 4Chan, and I know what kind of people come here, I didn't want to keep this from you........ ;o)

Not sure of the specifics, but it starts here:

(Which is selling his models as well as some others)

I can see why the US is worried about China's economic weight. So busy trying to save money from bleeding out of US IP Copyright wounds by forcing IP rules on everyone, while the only true competition actually encourages their Co's to violate it.

Better start gettin' Guerilla...cuz CN has no incentive to stop.

Geez louise, you're acting like a real cheapskate, so what if he sees his work as profitable? He did say he needed a way to support the high bandwidth cost he's taking out of his own pocket, as most people who download from his site do not care to 'donate' for a good cause. Also, how would you like to see others taking credit (and money) for something you've worked hard for? Chances are, people would want to buy the original from the actual reputable seller than someone unknown in China.

There might be a big chance Disney might go after him for making Disney related products without proper royalties. Charging people for models will assure him that he can continue with his work since he has money to pay such royalties once Disney decides to act like a legal bitch.

This is the USA, you're supposed to fling money around like dung. For heaven's sake act like an American who thinks he can buy everything with money.

Agreed and considering the quality of this guys work, it's amazing he didn't charge twice as much as he does for some of his stuff. I mean Disney hadn't even bothered to try to put stuff like this out and they have more money than some Deities. I don't know the whole story, but I thinker Trader Sam started doing this as a Disney fan and Disney, who is just as liberal with their lawyers as Mattel, let it go because he makes Disney look so damned good.

Response to part 2 of your "logic".

In most parts of the world, not raising a stink and not assigning 'value' to something of yours while someone else does can, and does, result in IP rights conflicts where judgement is made against you.

I.E. Asshat Chinese Company (ACC) establishs regular sales and catalog of product. China decides to protect their 'entrepeneur' and gives them IP rights. ACC complains to US about US Citizen pirating 'their' product by giving it away for free. US has to side with ACC because 1) US it constantly spewing about IP rights and 2) US Citizen is a person and not a 'Business Man', hence no real reason to protect in this case.

Assigning value to the product gives the US reason and incentive to protect the product.

Is my explaination fucked up? Yes. Does it happen? Oh yes. You would not believe how much.

And a funny aside, Disney could complain forever about the Chinese company selling it and the US would complain to China, but China would say 'Getting right on that!' and not do a damned thing to stop it. Hell, the Chinese govt would quite probably give the ACC govt subsidies.

In any case, the whole point of this was.

You can get most of then for free NOW, even if he is charging for them.....For now. This info was given on 4chan /po/ to benefit 4channers.

Not to debate the logic of charging for damned fine work or US/CN trade relations.

>>28418Also, how would you like to see others taking credit (and money) for something you've worked hard for?
That actually happened on E-bay, where some of my own free models were being sold, but I'm not losing money, so what? I felt more sorry for the people that bought them when they could have gotten them for free.

>>28418Chances are, people would want to buy the original from the actual reputable seller than someone unknown in China.
No, they would buy it from the place where it's cheapest (if they don't care enough about Trader Sam to make a small donation, why would they care enough to buy it from TS instead of the pirate??). And cheapest would be 'for free'. That way you would be sure when people just look at the prices, they would go to you and not to the pirate. If you just want to fight the pirate out of principle, that would be the way to go. But obviously, it's a matter of making money. That's something TS should decide on his own, but then just say you need money to pay for bandwidth and that's why you want to charge model for your work.
You see, I'm not 'mad' at him for him wanting to make money with his paper models, if I am 'mad' at him, it's for him trying to lie to us claiming he has no other choice because of this pirate...

>>28418There might be a big chance Disney might go after him for making Disney related products without proper royalties.
If Disney decides to do that, you *probably* wouldn't be able to make enough money selling paper models to pay for the royalties...

>>28418This is the USA, you're supposed to fling money around like dung.
Internet does not equal USA?? And why would I want to act like I can buy everything with money?? I'm the guy wanting everything for free, remember?? What, because it's 'the American way'?? You'll have to do way better than that to convince me...

So basically, I think your arguments are a whole lot of bullshit that don't make any sense...

I'm here for papercrafts (not even for origami ;o), but certainly not for a lecture how China protects their stuff and how the US doesn't, and how that can cause problems between these two countries. I don't care about the problems China and the US have regarding this and which is right and which is wrong.

But let me ask you this: where did you find that Trader Sam is going to ask for money for his models? Is it on his blog? Link to where Trader Sam announces this please!
Because I can't imagine he would that, because it wouldn't do any good to stop the pirate. And if Trader Sam isn't going to do that, then all the rest posted here doesn't matter.............

Some time ago, Pete Michaud wrote a small article about my Advance Wars papercrafts in the Community section of Nintendo Power Magazine. And Pete thought it would be funny to end with a witty remark:
"If you're interested, head to http://members.home.nl/saarloos. There you'll find everything you need (including step-by-step instructions and pics of the final products) to create your own flammable battalion."
A couple of weeks later, I received these pictures from someone who read Pete's article in NPM... ;o)

"I'm seriously reconsidering selling my models.....All paper model downloads have been suspended until I come to a final decision."

'I originally planned to yank the models permanently, replacing them with CDs to purchase. But it was one of Becky's comments that reminded me that "we should always concentrate on this being a fan site above and beyond all else."'

Lost the other connecting blogs.

In any case, Traders Sam had pulled all the models then decided on a combo of free and donation/cd charge. He also makes the newest models pay only until he decides to release them publically (fairly standard practice).

In any case, I stick by my comment in my first post...

And then I'd like to stick with my post: selling your paper models instead of offering them for free is not a good way to fight pirates selling your work, but it *is* a good way to make money with your paper models. ;o)
