Okay, here's a question for /po/

I found this 3d file and I'm thinking about shelling out the $100 for it. (Yeah, in addition to hanging out in /po/ I hang out in /m/ as well)

I'd love to make a papercraft of it, but it says the only available download is a .max file.

.max files (in this case) are from Autodesk's 3ds Max program. A rather expensive 3d program (apparently you can use it to make movies.)

Since I'd rather make papercraft than movies, if I purchase the .max file, is there a way to convert the file into something we can craft? I've done a lot of papercrafts, but never done more than print out the PDF or JPG's So what programs would I need for this project?

Here's the link for the Gundam X model. There's also several other gundams in there. Most are kinda pricy, but, hey, if I can scale these things up to make a 7 foot tall gundam in time for halloween.... I'll pay for it.

I don't know if any program other than 3ds max files can open .max files; if you google convert max to obj you might find something (obj is a format that does very well in many 3D apps and Pepakura Designer (that's the program you're most likely going to be using to unfold the 3D model).

BUT: it looks like a überly detailed model (done in max, and for 100 bucks, I'm pretty sure it is...)
And that is BAAAAAAD to make it into a papercraft... I see three options:
1)you buy this one and use it as it is without any/not doing enough work in a 3D app to majorly simplify it and as a result make a crappy papercraft out of it...
2) you buy this one, and do ALL the work that is needed on the 3D model to simplify it (of course this can be done!! but it will take A LOT of time to do it good, and you really need to work towards making it into a paper model, which can take several tries of testbuilding, finding things to fix and so on)
3) you forget about this one, and find yourself a (free?) low poly Gundam that's more suited to make into papercraft (which will probably still need SOME work on the 3D model too.
Options 2 or 3 have my vote, 3 more than 2, but I'm not you, so you decide. ;)

You can download a 30 day trial from 3DS Max at the official site, and 30 days should be plenty time to open the file, then click Menu -> Export as -> Wavefront *.obj to convert it to a filetype many free modelling programs can open (SketchUp, simplest ever, Metasequoia, a bit more difficult but still much simpler than 3DS Max, and many, many others)
But I have to agree with>>94624: if it is just to make it into a paper model, I'm not sure it's really worth your money...

COUGH COUGH TORRENTS COUGH

No way you'd ever be able to make a human sized gundam model, fit to YOUR specs, in time for Halloween. At least not THIS Halloween.

Gundam's are fucked up as far as proportions go. HUGE CLOWN feet, small voodoo heads. Plus WIDE ass fucking shoulders. You'd most likely be able to make a model from scratch to fit you better than fucking around with a pre-made to-scale model until you hit the right equation.

OP doesn't want Max (nobody does except professional modellers and people that think they can be professional modellers) he wants a way to convert it to something he can open in a MUCH simpler program. ;)
>> Ilucifera
Only way to open .max is with 3ds max so to convert a .max you will need 3ds max(only thing I do with it)
I agree with>>94624
No use simplifying a detailed model when there are plenty simple ones around

Download the free 30 day trial from the official site.
Convert the model.
Delete the 30 day free trial from the official site.
Don't bother with torrents.
???
Profit.
>> Ilucifera
Yeah a 100 000 polygon model
and then ? .max models are no good for papercraft unless U seriously remodel them and thats next most difficult thing to building one from scratch....

OP here, thanks guys. well...

After your advice, I think I'll save myself the $100 and see if I can find another Gundam X with Rapidsearch. One that's friendlier to /PO/ type work.

Google dont fail me now
