Also, PLEASE do some Gallente ships. So far Gallente is the only race without any. I think a Megathron would be doable. I'd like a Myrm but I know it would look like shit without being very detailed, and if it was detailed I wouldn't be able to make it. Nyx, Thanatos, Obelisk, Imicus, Navitas.

Bah, I'm a greedy bastard. How hard is it to figure out papakura, or whatever the thing is called? I'd love to be able to make myself some papercrafts. And post them here for all of /po/.

Yeah, those are the right textures. It just uses gc2 for all three. Or gc2_lowsat, but normal looks better.

Here's a .obj, if anyone wants to try it. Looks like you have to have the textures separate for pepakura, so I'll convert those and upload them along with some other ships later, but now I have to clean the house and scoop up the dog shit in the backyard. Joy.

So fuck it, I'll try my hand at making a papercraft. I make no guarantees, and I wouldn't get my hopes up, but I'll see if pepakura doesn't explode when I try. I'm going to try and practice on a model that's not so curvy, I hear they make pepakura pitch a bitch-fit.

I'm trying my damnedest, but it remains to be seen. I"m poking around pepakura for the first time, now. I'm probably not the best person to be trying- I haven't actually made a papercraft yet. Running low on ink, cardstock and money, and I've got better things to spend them all on, believe it or not.

Hell, I wish someone would tell ME how to do it. The internet needs more instructions, guidelines and tutorials in general.

And I think that these models won't become papercrafts without remaking them with more simplicity anyway. I've looked at the Heron and the Rifter, and I don't think that they're the EVE in-game models. The creator remade the models to be more papercraft-friendly.

Really all I used was the 'Specify Open Edges' (the orange lines) & 'Edit Model'. I'm not sure why I thought to use them, but apparently it made sense at the time. I wouldn't have really tried to simplify it if>>171829hadn't mentioned the others looking like they had been. Should be much easier than all those tiny creases.

I still kind of suck at it, I don't know what half the buttons do, but fortunately that doesn't seem to be posing much of a problem.

Right now I'm getting rid of useless flaps and making sure all the right pieces are connected (pic related). I think I'm pretty close to asking someone to test build it for me, actually.

So, I went to texture- and discovered what I did when I chose 'Flip faces' at the beginning. No big deal- I needed to run the original TriExp export through 3ds max first anyways. So, texture lined up all pretty, I open up the .3ds in pepakura, everything fine. I open up the .dds texture file in GIMP and save it as a .jpg. When I go to texture it pepakura, everything is lined up and in the proper place like it's supposed to be- except it's white. See pic. It should look like the one on the right.

Anyone know wtf I did wrong? How I can fix it?

Also ran into a whole 'nother problem. The texture doesn't actually map right onto the simplified version. Hopefully I can simplify it in 3ds and make the texture fit right there.

I think my other problem with the texture has something to do with .jpg and .bmp formats not being able to handle multiple layers. Need to dissect it further.

Okay, so all the layers had texture info on them, but I did manage to make them all visible and then flatten the image, and it looks a little better- like moths went at it, but still better. I just don't know what I'm missing. -_-

I don't think that's the right approach to take. I don't know how the texture system in EVE is set up, but I know that ever model has 5 or 6 different maps applied to it. The diffuse, the specular, all that jazz. Instead of merging them, you want to try to get only the material (is that the right term?). You don't want them all mashed together, because you wouldn't see them like that in the game. You'd only see the material, the specular and bump map and diffuse would just affect things like the lighting.

It uses mipmaps, which I just read up on here, and it's seriously fucking with my head. The .dds file doesn't have anything do with the maps you mentioned, they're a whole other thing unto themselves, so that's not the problem. Like I said, making the layers visible and flattening the image actually improved the texture.

I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with the mipmaps other than that, tho. I'm seriously considering making a whole new texture based on what's visible in 3ds max, but I don't know how. This has been one hell of a learning experience, and it's still not over.

Also, can someone help me track down whoever made the first two ships in this thread? Maybe if I can get a hold of them they can point me in the right direction.

No. I looked at it, but Pepakura got confused by all the triangles and produced some strange flats. It was probably me being unskilled at using Pepakura rather than the app, though.

I used the original models (before I released the Rifter I mailed CCP first, to explain and check). The essential process was import the game model into a 3D app of your choice and break it down into manageable chunks - at the lowest level you can get into individual triangles (take a look at the Rifter - need to sort that at some point). Flats are then forthcoming from there.

Texturing was again using the teture files from the game. They're DDS files IIRC, so I used something like Irfanview to view and export them. Placing them to the flat shapes was done via the use of reference shots of the ships in-game. Note that there are a number of files that a texture can come from as some common stuff is used across ships.
