Newspaper chair Anonymous
Okay /po/, I am in need of your assistance.
I have a physics project in which I must construct a chair out of newspaper and 4 meters of masking tape. And with this chair I must sit with my legs in the air for 30 sec, then sit another 2 min with my feet on the floor. I need it to hold about 130lbs during that time. Does /po/ have any suggestions on how to get it to hold the weight?

tl;dr: Making a chair out of newspaper and 4 meters of masking tape. How do I get it to support 130lbs?

Series of tubes. Paper cylinders can hold more weight than you might think...

As long as "chair" can mean "stool", I'd suggest nine (or more) cylinder legs, and two layers of cylinders going back and forth atop each other as the "seat".

Of course, triangles are better... and simply googling "newspaper chair" brings up multiple results, including a segment on ZOOM (PBS show) about the subject.

That would be REALLY EASY
if you have no limit on the newspaper amount, THEN ABUSE IT!
make a pile of newspaper and sit over there!
no, just kidding (yeah, i know, not even close funny)
make 12 cilinders of newspaper (do NOT use the masking tape there, just in the last layer to keep them united)
put four cilinders in vertical position, and the n make a square with 4 more cilinders and tape them in the low part of the vertical ones, do the same on the uper parts and then make 2 more cilinders, that will conect the diagonal legs (to keep them from lost its square form)
finished that, put loads of newspaper in the upper side and voila!

sorry, it may be actually not even a good idea, but hey! it came just in a moment!

I have tried looking at the ZOOM segment, and you have to pay to watch it (or rather, be part of the teacher resource thing). Google only provided a couple of relevant results

Wow, I feel really stupid knowing that 3rd graders do the same project...

Thanks! I'm beginning to get an Idea of what I need to do to strength and support the structure.

Thanks /po/!

tubes and triangles, tubes and triangles...

just make as many tubes with as much mass as you can put all in vertical position. wrap tape around all the tubes. possibly 3 times at regular intervals. Put another piece on top for even distribution. They never said your chair could not have more then 4 legs. or just go with>>96433
