anyone started a template for her?

Well I'm just using CannonFodder's MDL Decompiler, and it just straight up won't work for some models.

Any tips?

I agree.

Someone make this now.
>> Anonymous
DO WANT
>> Anonymous
if someone were to send me a 3ds max-readable file, i would consider simplifying it to be build-able (really depending on how bad all the wires and such are, i'd need to take a good look at it), as I have never been able to decompile the model with cannonfodder's tool...

Don't have to do the wires, just have them be sinlge strips of paper.

Someone do this, it is needed. I want GLaDOS on my ceiling!
>> Anonymous
>>152960Don't have to do the wires, just have them be sinlge strips of paper.
lol I think by wires he means the mesh: the polygons that make the model. The "wires" are the lines you see in a mesh model: basically the edges of the polygons.
And yes, on game models, the "wires" are usually not suitable for papercraft. Especially not on newer games and especially not on curvaceous models...

I mark fail on your head with my stamp of glory.
What the hell were you talking about? Wires are wires. Open your computer and you will see wires.
You fail at life. Go die!
>> Anonymous
no i really did mean the wires, not the vertices's or anything like that

i'll post a .3ds of glados's body tomorrow. ill see about the various spheres she's accompanied by as well.
>> Anonymous
how did you decompile it? i tried using cannonfodder's mdl decompiler once i downloaded the demo through steam, but the decompiler wont load the glados body model... though it does work on most other models
>> Anonymous

I actually also thought he meant the wires in the wireframe model. Or at least I hoped so, because then I would have been reassured that since he was speaking "the lingo", knew the terminology and therefore would probably be skilled enough to realize that it needs lots of fixing and that he would probably also have the skills to do it properly. Wires is a common term in 3D land. And they need A LOT of fixing before you can attempt to make this into a paper model, and LONG before you need to worry how you are going to make the wires. ;)
>> Anonymous
bump
>> Anonymous
i know what wires means in "3d land", i was just originally going to model it from scratch, like i did for the turret and security camera. the reason i had decided to scrap that idea until now was just the daunting-ness of the task. with an actual rip of the model from the game, it makes it much more likely that i'll be able to re-work the mesh into something buildable

>> Anonymous
Ok, I've finally had a chance to sit down and really pick through it, and I think I can make it work, but only with a lot of... artistic liberties... shall we say. We'll see how it comes out as the week progresses.
>> Anonymous
>>153408
make it 15cm to 20cm, and we've a deal...
>> Anonymous
demands, demands! why is everyone demanding i do something for them today? what do i get in this deal, huh? ;) i'll make it whatever size i please!

hmm, 20 cm is like 8 inches... thats actually kinda big. 15 might be ok, well let's worry about making it build-able first
>> Anonymous
actually, if you set it at 30cm, not only will a couple parts be bigger than an actual piece of paper, but it'll also be easier to build due to the fact that half of GLaDOS's parts are merely lines o_0 i'll show you what i mean:
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
30cm, but i haven't relocated most of the smaller parts, so it's definitely not going to be that many pages
>> Anonymous

i'm beginning to feel very negative about ever having an awesome GLaDOS papercraft :(
>> GoblinGuy
>>153719
You're a beginner at Pepakura, aren't you? You need to make it bigger, and you need to join/disjoin faces manually. Play around with Pepakura. I don't expect you to get anywhere with a model this complex, but it can be a good model to just play around with in Pepakura.
>> Anonymous !bgREVLN8FU
Why not take seperate parts of GLaDOS, like head, body, other body, and send them off as separate 3D files, then put them all together into one huge papercraft?
>> Anonymous
I'm not just importing it into pepakura and scaling it up until it's at a build-able size. With the detail this model has, you wouldn't be able to build it unless it were 10 feet tall. I'm using 3ds max to basically shape a new simple one using the complex one as a guide, hence my comment about "artistic liberties"
>> GoblinGuy
>>153742
I wasn't suggesting you do that. I meant you could scale it up to where you could work with Pepakura, assuming you were a beginner at it.
>> Anonymous
>>153723

yeah i'm a beginner. it's pretty fun to mess around with and i've already learned a lot. but i'm totally not going to be able to make it usable for anyone.. but hey, at least i tried? :)

Now that's pretty cool. I still think you could separate the GLaDOS frame into different parts, like those colored sections, and send those into Pepakura.
>> Anonymous
...that's what i did. i just need to texture everything
>> Anonymous
That's probably as good as it can get without being overly complicated.
>> Anonymous !bgREVLN8FU
Well, what I meant was to take the different parts of GLaDOS, make each one a seperate papercraft thing, and then combine them together to make one big model, and not one small model with dots.

But whatever.

noob observation...all the dots and commas and dashes on that page with the starburst tabs, would just become dots and commas and dashes drawn on larger parts instead of modelled bolt heads and flanges and crap like ingame, so a lot of that sheet would vanish into line art, right?

My suggestion: Make all the large parts of GlaDos, and then just use flat strips of paper for the wires.
>> Anonymous
>>155074

That looks perfect, not too complex, but it still captures the shape.
>> Anonymous
Ok, I've textured most of the model so far, just have the arms left to do. I'm not sure how I'm going to handle the wires though. I think I may just omit them all together since this model is already turning out to be more complex than I had originally planned.

I also need to figure out what to do for the large main cable; whether I should just chamfer it off to make a flat top, and you can glue it to the underside of a shelf, or make it like a hook so you can hang it off of a stand or something.

Suggestions, anyone?
>> Anonymous
>>157442
You could add an optional page that would make the hook, that way it could be built either way. Also, keep up the good work. :)
>> Anonymous
>>157514
Or maybe someone other than the person making the main body, because he has enough work as it is, could do the screens and lower section of the big cylinder thing she's attached to, once we know the final size of GlaDOS.
>> Anonymous /po/
>>155074
Whoa, billybob884 goes to 4chan?
>> Anonymous
Ok, I decided to just make the two different styles I mentioned before. You can use an un-bent coat hanger or something to hang it from if you use the non-cropped version. I figure I'll probably scale it to be ~8 inches (21cm) tall.

I finally finished texturing it, so this week I'll work on making the pieces, and eventually building the final one. The arms came out ok, as good as they could have considering how much detail I had to take out. I'll post pictures later.

When will GLaDOS be ready? Do you have a target release date?
>> Anonymous
Is it out of beta, are you releasing on time?
>> Anonymous
even with having to reformat my laptop, i'll be releasing on time... which is easy because i never set a release date ;)

i'm about to start my first build, just have to do a couple touch-ups in photoshop, once its reinstalled. it's lookin to have 5 total pages, but the last two are for the two options for hanging it, so really only 4 pages (i.e. you omit either the 4th or 5th)
