He had Pokemon Red and Pokemon Diamond with him, so he struck up a conversation with me over it and found out that I kind of knew what he was talking about. I'm kind of limited, though. I stopped keeping track of most of the characters after Mew. I still felt that wasn't bad for being in middle school when it first came over to the USA. By the time it caught on, I was in high school.
Pokemon has remained popular simply because Japan has refined the art of marketing to kids. There's the cartoon, the games, and the toys. As long as one part of the triangle is still popular, it fuels the other two.
