hey i just had a random idea, and i was wondering if its been done before. Has anyone ever made a craft totally out of transparency and filled it with a transparent or translucent gel or other solid?
>> Anonymous
No.
>> Anonymous
wouldnt that totally mess with the paper? not to mention leaks
>> Anonymous
>>159115
"out of transparency" not paper
>> Anonymous
You have think about the glue tabs showings. Technically it's possible to assemble a model without such tabs but then there is gel leakage as anon mention before.
>> Anonymous
well i had assumed that we wouldn't use tabs cuase that would be awefulugly and that the edges would be glued well, as in the whole edge. when it comes to filling though, i don't mean something that would stay liquid, i meant something that would solidify. I'm really just trying to think about this being a replacement to say carving glass like in the OP, because i know we all have the resources to do that, lol.

I work as a painter and I've been thinking of taking some resin clear and trying to encase my smaller paper crafts in a block of clear resin to see if it'll work.

yay for those who are actually bringing related ideas to OP

Sounds like an interesting idea, but inkjet ink would probably dissolve. Don't know much about laser printer toner, so can't say whether that would work.

That said, I remember my old Lexmark in the mid-'90s had waterproof ink...
>> Anonymous
speaking of rare papercrafts, has anyone seen a fire/fireball papercraft? Google has failed me...maybe /po/ can enlighten me
>> Anonymous
>>159256
OP here
it may dissolve but i would think it wouldn't travel far before the resin hardened. this could be good. it could just slightly blur the craft giving it a rounded less flat edgy feel that would effect the realism of it. I have trouble explaining it, but it sounds good in my head.

Painter guy here, forgot to mention about that 50in1 resin. It costs 300 dollars for 1 gallon of it, and thats the smallest size I've seen it in. And thats at the paint contractors discount price.

I was thinking into make a ramiel with regular paper and them make a second layer with blue transparency for realistic effect

Transparency as in the clear plastic sheets you write on over a projector? That stuff is a bitch to fold. I've tried it before for other projects. On the other hand, sealing it together with some melted plastic or something might solve the problem, but that's not really papercrafting.
>> Anonymous
>>159896
Try make a line with a scalpel where you need to fold. (enought to ease the fold but don't cut it)
>> Anonymous
>>160124
any folds would mean tabs, and tabs would be bad cause you could see it all. You would most likely have to glue the edged directly, but that isn't hard with the right glue. While it isn't truly paper crafting, it's an extension of it, cause you are using the PC template.
>> Anonymous
>>160169
Folding does not automatically mean tabs, you can have a fold between two parts, instead of between a part and a tab. ;)
I agree tabs wouldn't be very pretty on a see through "papercraft". But it kinda depends on how thick the transparancies are if you want to glue them on the edges: if it's paper thin, no matter what glue you use, the bond won't be very strong. You'll probably just end up making a mess trying to apply the glue to the edge... And with all the bending/warping/curving of the parts while you try to glue them together, it'll be hellish to try and press them together properly to try and get a good bond.
To avoid making a mess, maybe spreading out some glue on a scrap piece of cardboard then lightly pressing the edge of the transparancy in it is probably better than trying to put the glue directly on the edge (it will just run down the sides...)

Just make a tab as big as the near face and glue it all over the face with transparent glue!

This will not be easy, will take much more sheets than normal papercrafts but can do the trick.

>>160726
The sides with "double parts" will look different than the sides with just just one part. Transparant sheet+transparant glue+transparant sheet sounds nice in theory, but it won't look the same in reality. glueing the edges is the best way to get the desired effect, but it's a lot harder than it sounds to do it good enough...
>> Anonymous
>>160860
Make all sides double parts!
cut a face identical to the simple part and glue it!.
the main problem are the finger markes on the glue, maybe we can fix it with some kind of varnish...
>> Anonymous
does anyone know of truly transparant glue?
Many glues dry "transparant" (enough) on all kinds of materials, but whenever I try to glue transparant sheets on the edge, I spill some on the sides for instance and it turnes out the glue doesn't dry so transparant after all: the glue turns into a white haze, like the sheet has been sandblasted.
No glue I know dries glass like transparant enough so that you won't notice the layer of glue between the two transparant sheets... :(

some resins can be used to glue it...

the problem is not the glue but the surface... glass is only transparent if it's surface is smooth, you need to get a way to make the glue surface smooth...

A papercraft treasure chest full of Rupees from Zelda made of colored acetate would be nice
>> Anonymous
I dunno about the incorporation of papercraft, but Acrylic awards that jobs that can't afford gold watches, give to their employees, are made in a process similar to how you describe. They use cardboard, though.

saw that a while back. this thread was meant to find a way to make models out of transparency so as to fore go the cost and necessary time and effort it would take to machine acrylic parts for a model. basically a cheap method for us papercrafters.

Well, while someone mentioned earlier to use acrylic sheets, and someone else said it wouldn't really be papercraft... it WOULD get rid of seams (instead of folds and tabs, the thicker material would have angled sides that glue together. I guess figuring out those angles would be yet more complications though) and allow you to fill the rest with something transparent. Maybe not practical for something with a lot of surfaces, since each one would have to be a separate piece, but it's an option. At least it would be easy for simple geometric shapes like boxes and pyramids.

>>159747
I don't actually see any layering like you're describing. Shouldn't you just use transparent blue for the whole thing? Actually... it looks more reflective than transparent. You can't see the surfaces in back through it, so the sky you're seeing must just be reflecting off it.
>> Anonymous
Yeah, it's reflexive like glass. I was thinking in using a transparency sheet to make the surface reflexive and use paper so you can't see thought it.
>> Anonymous
I haven't made a Papercraft out of transparency Per-Say

I have however, made Origami out of Lamination Trimmings.

Give me a few days and I'll post pics of some. They're all at my place of business and I wont be working for the next few days.
