/po/, I made this while 4chan was down. There are many problems with it, but this is only a test-build. I know how and have fixed all of the problems except for one.

This beak... to put it bluntly, SUCKS! I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how I could get the beak to look more like the original. One second and I will upload a reference picture and the beak I used.

One other thing. Except for the body and the eyes, I drew everything by hand, so modeling a beak isn't in my best interest, nor can I actually model one.
>> GoblinGuy

These are the beak parts I drew by hand, more or less. I ended up gluing a different bottom of the beak to the one shown in the OP because I went through about 4 different beak prototypes.

There are just for reference so that you guys can help me.

mabey, have the lower beak further down and instead of pointed, round?
>> GoblinGuy
>>166923
That's the problem. The top part needs to be higher up, and the bottom part needs to be further down, but at the same time the mouth needs to close. The way it is now, you can see green between the two halves of the beak. I want to completely close that part while doing what was described above.
>> Anonymous
You could color the inside portion of his mouth black instead of green and make a tongue if you lower the bottom beak so it looks like he's talking.
>> GoblinGuy
>>166929
The green part is the body. I could do that, but I don't think I will before I get a working beak going because I don't want to waste a huge block of black ink on a test-build. Or more than one test-build.

What I'm looking for here is not merely just suggestions on "what to do" but more of "how to do it". Like I said, I've gone through many prototypes of the beak, and still couldn't figure out how to draw it on paper to get it to look like the original.

It looks like the beak is stretching back too far on the body. In>>166913the screw (or whatever) is in front of the wing, not above it.

Can't really help you with the actual construction of the beak tho, I haven't made enough papercrafts to understand the dynamics of what it takes to make one.

Judging from the reference pic I think the beak needs to be bigger in proportion to the body.

Maybe a recolor/resize of this parrot would help?

This

What you could do, is try to follow the pattern of the metal plates in the reference pic. Try making the beak out of 3 different portions to get that curvature, or make small slits on it (kind of like the way the chokipeta models do to make the round heads)

also, for the bottom half of the beak, have you seen that one cartoony white skull that gets reposted a lot that has that long roll of paper that acts as a hinge for the jaw? you could try that in combination with the flap/hinge that>>166981suggested

>>167084
Got it.

I'm still running into the same two problems with each different one I print out.

1) The beak is too long, as seen in OP

2) The beak is not round enough

No matter what I'm doing, I'm still getting 1 of the 2 with each one. Not to mention I want to get the bottom half of the beak to close to where there's no green, (or black) showing when he's not talking. This is really complicated. I even tried sectioning it off into three parts as mentioned above, and I still couldn't get it quite right. I really want to try the pole idea, but it's not going to happen if I can't get the beak the way I want it first because I don't want to try out the pole, THEN make the beak, and then find out that the pole idea doesn't work with a correct beak (size issues, etc.).

I'm still in need of help. I've literally tried almost everything.

Design the beak in 3D Modeling Program, then export to Pepakura? Or make the beak in various sections, as said before.
>> GoblinGuy
>>167119
Well this is a little stupid, but um..

See, the only 3D modeling program I'm even remotely workable with is Wings3D. I'm not very good at it, but I can do all right with some things. Embarassing to say, but I have no idea how to make a model that only has one side of faces. I don't want the beak to be
___
------\

3D like that. I just want it to be flat, and one-sided.

Also I said in>>167102
>I even tried sectioning it off into three parts as mentioned above, and I still couldn't get it quite right.

:(
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
I tried. That's all I can say....

Sketchup doesn't really allow for complex extrusions like this, and I don't know how to convert SolidWorks files into Pepakura readable formats =/
>> Trippin' !!9z23VPHrCcB
>>167102

Did you try making each of those 3 sections of the beak much longer and then making little slits with tabs like I mentioned earlier? the more slits you put in, the more curve it will give it.

Also, you could probably try making the book more then just three sections. that would probably help on both accounts.

either way, don't give up goblinguy!
>> GoblinGuy
>>167122
Say now, that looks perfect! That's a 3D view I'm looking at and not just a drawing, right? Because that would work great for the top half of the beak. Maybe just a bit more curve would help, but yeah, that's what I'm looking to get. Hard to put it down on paper using mental images though. :)

>>167136
Not the "making the 3 sections longer" part, but the slits part, yes. It's sad, because if I put the slits just on the outside of the parts, the only parts that get curved are the sides, the middle is uneffected. However, if I put slits all the way to the middle, it just puts the beak at a downward angle that looks un-natural.
>> Anonymous
>>167137

Yeah, that's the 3D wireframe I came up with in Sketchup. But unfortunately it doesn't have the capability (that I'm aware of) to make a section follow multiple curves that would allow for the beak.... sorry. =/
>> NYB
     File :-(, x)
Instead of making the slits longer (left side of pic), try making slits segmented with each segment at a wider angle (right side of pic). That should give a much more natural and consistent curve.
>> GoblinGuy

Here's a larger version and the template I made.
>> GoblinGuy
>>167179
That's how a lot of mine are turning out. Maybe it's just because I don't have a bottom beak part to attach to it, but um...

Notice how in the actual cartoon its beak is curving more and more downward at all times? Mine, and yours, is straight (more or less) until it gets to the very end of the beak. It needs to be curved from the large part of the beak all the way to the end. Does this make sense?
>> GoblinGuy
>>167182
That being said, the smaller one that you made looks to be doing just that, just needs a bit more curve to it. Is it the same template only smaller?
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
The larger one in my second post has more curve than the pic is showing. When I wrap it around a cylinder the curve becomes more visible. But like I said, this was just a first go at it.
>> Trippin' !!9z23VPHrCcB
This anon's>>167179beak looks no different than>>167164's, template wise

the big difference would be if he pulled the beak in a lot more before he glued it. like in the second pic, the next part of the beak is barely glued on to the last part (where the slit is, i mean) and in the first part, more of it was pulled back and glued under the flap of the slit in the beak

tell me if that's confusing,

>>167186
Makes sense, I need a way to translate that into "stick and build" so I won't have to include "hey on these tabs glue a little bit further than where the tab ends does that make sense?" into the templates. Larger tabs would make sense, but I'm also worrying about the problem that the angle will be too far downward, thus making it look un-natural.

Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Maybe instead of gluing the beak straight across like I did in the finished picture, I could glue it with an angle pointing upwards, that way any downward angles in future versions of the beak will work. This probably sounds confusing.

However... Imagine I add a bottom half to that one. Then the entire beak is too high up! But the top of the beak must be right below his eyes! What to do, what to do?
>> GoblinGuy
I think a major problem is that I've made the body too tall. I might have to go back and re-make the model. The more I look at it, the more it seems like that's the major problem.
>> NYB
Should I add another row to the back, to make it longer, or maybe curve it down a little more?

Would that help?
>> GoblinGuy
>>167218
That's another problem. The one in the picture is shorter than the one you provided. I just opened it in paint and stretched it to 80% of its original length. The length is perfect, I don't need it jutting out any more than that.

Curving down more might help, I don't know for sure, though.

I love you. The bottom part is what I was looking to get. The bottom is PERFECT! The top is also perfect except for the fact that it's too long. Unfortunately I can only grab one side of the beak to hold it together at one time, so the picture makes it look way shorter than it actually is.

This won't fit on the bird in its original size. I'm going to have to make the bird a bit smaller. This is great. With this, I feel like I can release this within the next 2 days. It all depends on how many problems I run into, and things look very good from here.

Also, you don't mind if I make a few modifications to the beak you provided, do you? It has huge tabs, the texture doesn't line up, and one side is uneven from the other. I'll fix these myself if you don't mind me doing it. I'm still going to give you full credit either way.

Mess with it all you want to. I just figured it out by looking at all of the ideas that people had in this thread so far, and took those into consideration while looking at the beak of piplup.
I knew you would have to mess with the beak anyway, because the body is round. If you need me to resize the beak, then I can do that. I can also give you the pdf file that I saved from photoshop.
This picture shows the original beak that I drew and scanned into the computer. From there, I used the line tool in photoshop to get straighter edges.
After looking at the beak, then the pic from Dexter's Laboratory, I think the tip of the beak may be too long. It should probably stop at the point where the tab ends. This would split the top of the beak into two parts, but that should be fine.
>> GoblinGuy
     File :-(, x)
>>169491
>After looking at the beak, then the pic from Dexter's Laboratory, I think the tip of the beak may be too long. It should probably stop at the point where the tab ends.

This was exactly what I thought when I assembled the beak. Here's where a few problems come into play. A little backstory first.

I couldn't find any videos on YouTube or anything that included the entire episode that the parrot was in, so I didn't know how many shots or angles of it I was missing. I got digital cable recently, and on the "On Demand" section, they had the Boomerang channel complete with a few episodes of Dexter's Lab. By complete coincidence, one of the 8 episodes available was The Parrot Trap.

Now, in the episode, the entire parrots size shifts. One second it will fit in your hand, the next its as big as your head. So the one I already made is in its "mid-point". Meaning it's not as big as its biggest, and not as small as its smallest. The problem this presents is that the beak is too small. And I printed the beak full-page. The beak needs to be bigger. So Jen, since I'm not confident in resizing/scaling to proportion abilities, would you be so kind as to spread the beak across 2 different pages? This would be much appreciated.

Also, two references of the beak itself. I might just include the option to do this:

Cut out the beak parts, glue them directly onto a sheet of black construction paper, and then cut out the part around the black construction paper, thus giving the mouth a black inside.
>> GoblinGuy

I'll get back to this in a bit. My brother is awake. Yay! Thanks for the reference pictures. From what I remember of my boyfriend's cable, he had Time Warner and Boomerang on Demand. We watched an episode of Sealab 2020 because we wanted to see how much stock footage Cartoon Network had to play with for Sealab 2021.
>> Jen
     File :-(, x)
Here's page 1 of the beak spread across two pages. I also took the liberty of taking that tip off the beak. It helps with the spread across two pages.
>> Jen

>>169579
And here's page 2.
>>169495
I like the construction paper idea. You should go with that for the inside of the beak.
>> GoblinGuy
>>169580
Great, I'll get started on this in a couple of hours. Watched the episode again, the screws on the side of the beak aren't on the sides of the parrot, more or less. They're just the beak. And the top part of the beak goes over the body and almost to the eyes. So instead of gluing tabs directly to the body, I'm going to see if I can't get some slits to slide the beak in, ala Chokipeta style. This way the beak can be attached after the body is built and will still look like the original.

Well, I THOUGHT it was perfect, but now that the beak only has 2 tabbed sections, it doesn't curve enough downwards. It needs at least 3 tabbed sections, but at the same time needs to stay its current length so that the beak doesn't jut out to next week. I'm going to print out a black and white test bird so I can begin working on the slits idea.
>> GoblinGuy
>>169661
Not three tabbed sections. I meant "three sections", two with tabs, and the end of the beak.
>> GoblinGuy
1) 2 tabbed sections
2) End of beak
3) End of beak needs to be shorter than the first one
4) The beak needs to be the same length as the second one.

There. Tired of making new posts to cover up my old ones. Bottom line is the new beak didn't work with it ending at the 2nd tab section.

Try this. I made some adjustments for possible curved beaks, and this one seemed nice in sketched form. I didn't scan the beaks in like I did last time, but the top half is the same as the first one I posted. The bottom half is a shortened version of the top half that I hope I drew properly in Photoshop. This beak is based on the curves the beak has in "cable 003.jpg." For a closed beak, the previous beak bottom along with this beak bottom should work to make a beak that looks a little more like the "cable 002.jpg" reference.

The images titled "beak-transparency" and "beak-3" should have beaks that are the same size percentage in relation to each other. In order to make the version of the beak that goes on two pages, I scaled these up by %500.
I'm giving you this information because I'm going to be moving back to college tomorrow, so I don't know when I'll get back to this board.

I'm glad you managed to figure out how to do it.

also, as a suggestion, make sure to photocopy or have a copy of the template as a backup when you testbuild it. that way it's easier to make adjustments, or for when you finally have it down right, you already have the template ready and you don't have to go back and pull it apart or try to remember how you did it.

All right, I'm tired of dealing with this stupid bird.

If anyone wants to try to put a beak on it, go ahead. Keep in mind this is the original template, and has texture problems, feet problems, and tail problems.

Please realize that THIS IS NOT A FINAL RELEASE, do NOT build this unless you're testing a beak, because this pack does NOT contain a beak. Also you'll find tail parts/small wings that I didn't use. You don't need to either. In fact you only need to build the base body to test a beak.
