Good luck.

PDO at http://heros-world.sakura.ne.jp/
Scroll down untill it says "PEPAKURA DESIGNER Page!"
The sixth link after that is the PDO.

wtf is that

The templates need a lot of work. It's like whoever made it just hit "unfold" and left it at that.

I think the person did SOME work (if you just auto-unfold, Pepakura will keep things together as one giant part if possible, so it would be even more connected). Certainly not the easiest papercraft ever though, I agree!

I think you got it backwards there Holmes.

every time I auto unfold it puts it into as many pieces as possible

Not if your 3D model was well made.
Do you get lots of red lines when opening your models in Pepakura Designer?

mostly around the detailed parts, like hair and sometimes faces, but it even splits into more than one piece if there are NO red lines

Got me then, your version of Pepakura does the exact opposite of everybody else's...
Unless you set your own fold and cut lines, Pepakura tries to keep everything connected as one big part. Only when it can't (red lines, when the polygons aren't properly connected) it doesn't of course...
Like in the example: the top part stays connected as much possible, of course there are usually some parts that can't stay connected or they'd be overlapping other parts (wome of the hairs on the bottom row) maybe that's what you meant?
Doesn't really matter though, because in any case, you'll need to set your own cut edges to make a buildable papercraft.
