A thought just popped into my head about using double-sided tape for papercraft. What does /po/ think of this idea? Has any of you tried it? I mean it's a more expensive solution than glue but no mess and good hold should make it an interesting alternative.

Never tried it, but seems like a lot of extra work; cutting it to the right shape/size, while you can just smear some glue without problems on any shape/size flap.
if you're having problems with your glue making a mess/not being sticky enough, try another glue (and if it's a mess, you also may have to improve your technigue), not a whole other medium: glue IS the best and preferred method of bonding things together when doing papercraft. Don't use glue sticks (not good enough) or hot glue (too good: you're trying to glue PAPER together, not some vinyl to some metal or whatever, and you'll only glue your fingers together).
Also, best protip ever: don't use too much glue!! Use only so much that when you press the parts together, the parts glue together almost instantly (almost, because sometimes you need to adjust it a little).

if I was sure it was all perfect, I'd stick it on the inside to help it tay together.

I do sometimes, occasionally
like when I need to put thin parts onto the part which I do not want to have a mess on

if you use tape, then that doesnt constitute papercrafting, plain and simple

Yes it does. It doesn't matter what you use to adhere the two surfaces. It's just called adhesive.

the only thing that needs to be consistent in papercrafting is that it's paper.

Hence papercraft, not paper-and-gluecraft FFS.

You don't have to tell me how to use glue, I'm no newb to papercrafting having built a few big projects. Either way glue can be messy especially with those bigger models, like the last one I did the Howl's flying castle everything held well but the effect wasn't as perfect as I'd wanted it to be.

Anyway I will be trying the tape soon as I get my hands on some.

This happened last time I tried to papercraft with tape.

if you dont know how to use glue properly then you dont know how to do papercrafts properly

wow! have done big projects? messy glue?

if you can't apply glue properly without getting messy (as you put it) then you don't know what the fuck your doing - start with something simple and learn the ropes first newb

Of course, why wouldn't you. ;)
You asked what /po/ thinks of double sided tape, and /po/ likes glue better. We don't have to agree, right? ;)
As for the it's not paper remarks; same thing, maybe they really think that, then that's their opinion, maybe they're just trying to get on your nerves, if you ignore them, they can't. ;)

Tape would be great if you didn't used tabs, you instead use that overlapping method (I can't remember what it's called). Using the double sided tape and those would create very neat edges, no drying, and generally more "perfect" papercrafts, ESPECIALLY for beginners.

Buttjoints? But I actually would NOT recommend it for beginners, it's actually harder, NOT easier...

Oh man, I remember that papercraft, it's the Devil's work I tell you, it took me 4 print-outs to get it right.

The secret is that you curve the parts before glueing them together.

I used double-sided tape for my very first papercraft which was a 3D reproduction of a picture of my cat sitting in a paper bag. I didn't have any glue and I didn't know how expensive the tape was.

The project was a whopping success but now, 10 years later, the glue on the tape is wearing out and the whole thing is starting to come apart. I wouldn't use double-sided tape again since it doesn't create a permanent bond.

Not this again. It should have it's own board or something. Whoever figures it out first will be worshipped.
