Okay /po/.

I'm posting the ancient dragon. I want to fucking make this, but last time i tried i gave up after 5 hours. I used paper that's approximately as big as a 17" monitor, and quite thin (origami paper). That paper turned out to be too fragile and too small. Now, /po/ let's make this work, shall we?

First we need to figure what kind of paper we need. Then i suppose a few of us start folding simultaneously, and we help each other on each step. I soooo wanna make this.

Err.. The file is three times as big as what we're allowed to upload here. So i guess i have to rapidshare it. Let me see if i can get that to work somehow.

anybody ever try using newspaper? That's the only thing I can think of that's really big. Would it hold creases, though?

Uggghhh I just tried folding the dragon w/ 12"x12" paper (thickness same as regular printing paper) and I got up to step 60 and quit. It just woudln't work anymore. I got so frustrated I cried.

Gaahhhh what a waste of my time! I should have been working on my essay instead!

I folded this "successfully" on my first try with a 13 3/4" sheet of foil painted on the white side with acrylic paint. The paitn really strenghtens the paper, but adds a bit of thickness. If I had shown the foil side out, there would have been craploads of white lines and fuzzy corners, and the model had a few minor rips in the interior anyway where the paper was ripped. It seems that any paper to be used for this will have to be very big, thin and strong (of course). Perhaps tissue foil, or kraft?

Would gift wrap paper work?

What exactly do you mean by foil? English isn't my native language, and the only close thing i found on wikipedia was metal leaves, which are far more fragile than paper.

That's what i thought, but according to

It must be some kind of paper, which aluminum foil isn't.

Look up Japanese foil. You can fold it from Japanese foil or tissue-foil, but MC-folding from something thinner, works better. You can try backcoating tissue paper, or just using unryu or something.

The one in the photo probably costs $20 in materials alone. He folds from like a meter square of Origamido paper.

Can someone megaupload that entire book, please. I've been looking for it everywhere.

What part are you having trouble with on the yellow bird? I've been making those for awhile now, so maybe I could be of some help?

I haven't bothered to try the ancient dragon or bahamut yet, even though I've got the book. I've mainly put it off because I know I need large paper for both of them. I think some thick mulberry paper might work if we need something that bends easily and can be cut to be a rather large square. Rice paper would work as well, as long as it isn't the edible paper kind or wanton spring roll wrappers.

I've got a book from Japan that's translated into English. The creator used many different types of Japanese paper, and explains why he used each type. One or two might be for flexibility and strength.

This dragon looks like a reason to do some origami instead of another paper gun...
