How do I maked drill texture :(

texture? er, well unwrap the UVs first?
>> Anonymous
im guessing u need to make a spiral texture to map on to the cone on the Y axis
just guessing
>> Krauzer
Let me try.
>> Anonymous
The problem Im having is the UVmap not unfolding right and the spiral texture getting stretched.
>> Anonymous
my 3d is very limited, but i remember u can bake the texture to surfaces, correct? and i guess when the drill gets unwrapped properly it should resemble a sort if fan shape?
>> Naota
it's been a while since i've done anything in 3d but you could draw a spiral around the cone and then create a triangular prism that will follow that line. it should give you that drill-like effect without using any texture. other than that, i know that you can add some effects to the texture to follow those kind of shape, but i don't remember how, sorry...
>> Anonymous
>>82567
That's the big trick texturing: when you put a 2D image (because that's basically what a texture is) on a 3D surface, it will get stretched in certain ways.
So you need to keep this in mind when designing the texture: you can't just "draw a 2D drill texture" as if you're looking at a drill at a 90 degree angle, you need to warp it the way it would unfold (it's quite ironic if you do textures for models that ultimately you want to make into papercrafts). It's very hard to get just right, and you really need to be very good at thinking 3D -> 2D -> 3D.

Anyone who use Hexa for design, give me some suggestion pls...
I still don't know how to paste texture on model.
>> Anonymous
>>82694
do you have a scanner?
>> Anonymous
>>82694
Fucking Awesome.
>> Anonymous
I know a way you could do this, but it wouldn't be textures on a 3D model. Print out two copies of the papercraft(I figure that it would fit on 1 page) built one temporarily somehow(I have a special kind of glue that never dries) draw your texture on the built one(the spiral) the trace that onto the unbuilt one and scan it into your computer. Fix it in an editor of some kind(shop it) and presto! a working textured papercraft!
>> Anonymous
>>82714
or if you don't have that kind of glue, just build it and carefully cut along where the two edges meet after you draw on the texture.

Do I win, or is this fail?

If you can figure out how to make the spiral on it, will you post the template?

I wanna make one.
>> MATHMAJOR
MATHMAJOR here, how many spirals and which angle of decline? Common cylindrical twist bits have two spirals at 45°, what is it for conical?
>> Anonymous
>>82799
Around 47 spirals.
>> Anonymous
>>82803
how sure are you?

110% sure, I also believe the slope is 90°.

someone make this anon a drill with 47 "spirals" at 90degrees.

ITT newdykes that failed geometry
>> Anonymous
Wouldn't the statement be "47 turns of the spiral", but the look depends on the base diameter and height. Normal drill bits have only 2 spirals, regular "cylindrical helixes", that decline at about 45degrees. A drill is a twisted inclined plane, a basic tool. the number of twists (not "number of spirals") depends on declination angle and length/heighth of spiral.
Calculating a spiral actually involves math. particularly passing the advanced courses in highschool... or at least passing basic highschool math courses; which this thread proves a lot of FAIL here.
Better off faking it by trail and error than doing it once with the math skills you don't have.

Is it 25%?

No. That guy is a troll from the EVA 25/50% thread a while back. I have no trouble admitting that I suck at math.

Im actually curious as to what is so hard about spiraling this thing...

I check into /po/ every now and again cause I thing you guys are awesome! And Ive only really done one thing (a kabuki mask a bit ago)

Either way I will be getting this thing and spiraling it for you.
>> Anonymous

around here... thereabouts anyways.

I'm not entirely sure how many spirals you want/need
>> Anonymous
DOH!

When I but it out and tried it myself the middle mark was off... :( I moved to the next mark when I transfered over... Ignore the one ^^^ there.
>> Anonymous

Here you go! And in some parts it even has the 5 spirals that you suggest to want in the photo.

What is this from anyways? Must have missed it.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
A rough rendering of that thing that I did in 3ds.

I am not the best at UV mapping. :-/
>> Anonymous
***note that It doesnt show a fifth thread because the UV mapping sucks ;-p I figured having it to scale was more important than having all of them on there and I didnt feel like working with it that much.

I imagine that the hardest part in using this would be aligning the lines.
