just a suggestion: plus4chan should add a a difficulty rating for each papercraft, say 1 being as simple as it gets and 10 being nearly impossible. I know it would help beginners like me be able to steadily devolop papercraft skills by increasing in difficulty one model at a time.

>> Kazenodeku !7vHiU7xxMc!!5Zo
As I said in a previous topic, I've been busy at work- and last time I finally got a day off, I ended up having stuff to do that day.

To be honest, I've also kinda been avoiding doing it. I could have done some after work, before bed, a few times this week, but since I have to add hundreds of entries to the database, by hand....

yeah. So, I apologize for my lazyass-ness.

If anyone wants to step up to help and add files to the database in a certain format, you have no idea how much I'd appreciate it.

I'm off tommorow/today (Sunday, Apr.23), but it's 1:43 AM PST, so I'm going to go crash for a few hours.

Afterwards, I swear to you on something important that I will work on the site.

No limitations, send any & all. If there's a copyright on it, and the copyright holder bitches, fine, I'll remove the copy on my site. I'll upload it to multiple mirrors, filehosts, and such though, so you won't notice it's gone. And it'll stay in the torrent.
>> Kazenodeku !7vHiU7xxMc!!5Zo
3 posts, such clutter I make. Anyway, in case anyone wants to know, here's my to do list.

TODO:
- !find database editing volunteers!
- Add all papercrafts I've been emailed
- Crawl my fav'd papercraft sites, add the files
- Update FAQs
- Slight redo of site design
- Add a papercraft difficulty ratings
- Reply to emails recieved that need responding
- Add "Easy Way to Mirror plus4chan" guide
- Add (requested) discussion board
- Torrent all papercrafts

not /PO/ related:
- Add links to 4chan-related sites(RT/Macrochan...)/other imageboards(WTFux/RealB...)/filehosts (Rapidshit/Savefile...)
- Add a simple Firefox 4chan-customizing (userContent.css + ff extensions) guide (anyone want to write it?)
- Upload the 'overchan' that I use (Already made it, might as well. I'd worry that I'm intruding on the real Overchan, but they haven't updated in months.)

I probably left something out. oh well. nite /po/, will begin updates in the morning.

Someone prolly already suggested these things, but I didn't have time to peruse all the comments in this thread. Helpful additions would be: All palette-swapped models stored in a single entry, with alternate links. Thumbnails for every single one (all this really requires is someone with a bit of time and a digital camera if you can't already find pics online). Larger pics you can click on for reference while building. A comment system so you can get help/ask questions about specific papercraft. And of course, the ability to change sort method (difficulty, name, creator, theme(?), etc.). This would lead to a better community of sorts and a real, comprehensive archive of every papercraft that passes through /po/.
>> Anonymous
>>13045
MLK: I have a dream...

...of the best papercraft archive on the www. Because if you could make a website which implements all of these ideas, that probably *would* be the best papercraft archive on the www...

Hosting the actual files instead of only providing links which results in a lot of dead links over time is a terrific idea, thumbnails so you can see what you're downloading would be a very welcome feature (no more downloading freaking hako Zelda instead of awesome Four Swords Zelda) and a comment system could be very useful for the tougher models that have no/crappy instructions.

But I have my doubts someone would. You see, this would take a lot of effort, one person with a life besides /po/ probably can't do this alone (http://plus4chan.org/papercraft/index.php), so others would actually have to be willing to put in some effort too and well... you know...

I'm more than happy to share links and the occasional files if someone here on /po/ requests a certain papercraft that I know/have, but I really can't be bothered to put a lot of time and effort in being a "database editing volunteer"...

E-mailing the stuff to one or a few persons and waiting for them to upload the stuff isn't the best/fastest method, and making uploading free for everybody is just plain stupid (I'm sure you can imagine why...).

I hope this actually takes off and we can all get this to work well, but I'm sure there's a reason why such an archive doesn't exist yet...

PS: in the meantime, /po/ rulez!!
>> papermodeller
>>9966
I don't know... Probably untill they find out? Everybody downloads MP3's without feeling guilty, and everybody downloads Innerbrain's Eva Units without feeling guilty...
And everybody wants to see all paper models in existence added to Plus4Chan, but if the creator of one finds out and wants his design to be removed, I guess Plus4Chan will have to comply?
>> Anonymous
>>13053
See, the thing is, this really isn't much work. I'm a web designer and I'd be happy to help out with the site. I'd even build the models without thumbnails and photo them, then subsequently place them in the correct spot. I'm even willing to redo the way things are presented (ie, overhaul the whole site for more efficiency). I don't know how to change sort type though, or add a comment system. I'd likely have to learn more php first. Anyway, the point is--none of my suggestions are very hard or time consuming. And it'd make the experience better for everyone.

>>13054
I think he meant more the companies who own the Intellectual Property, not the papercraft creators :D But yeah, you could just run it on a "until they find out" basis, and from that point on just link to their site.
>> Anonymous
>>13076
So why don't you contact Kazenodeku and help him out? (or is your name Alex Minkoff? ;o) And I hope you're already building, 'cause there're already a lot of thumbnails missing onhttp://plus4chan.org/papercraft/papercraft.php, 'though some of them can already be found online, they just weren't included; now thát's how much effort people are willing to invest ;o)

>> OnionRingOfDoom
>>13332
It'll be made of win once he updates... 13265 is right, it really should run on a script. I mean it would just be a simple MySQL database and a PHP display script.
>> PB !I4BDwDUbNU
>>13322
I think the automation remark makes sense, although just bitching about it won't help.
what looks like 5 minutes of work:
1. automate plus4chan to take uploads from anyone
2. idiots post the same crap all over, or just random files to annoy the hell out of everyone.
will clearly fail when it goes live.
so you'll need:
1. a registration system for users who want to upload. that takes care of most of the idiots, and it can give credit tot people who added a file, which is always nice.
2. added files will need a flag that shows they're not verified yet. download & build at own risk ;)
3. a couple of moderators are needed to check the uploaded files (template & preview image, if any), and flag them as "ok".
4. a banning script for idiots, just in case.
this is a tad bit more work than you think, and i'm sure i forgot a couple of important things there.
>>13415
are you talking about a mirror that needs php & mysql? because all a mirror really needs is a directory to store the files in. Ofcourse php would be nice for automatic updates, but I don't see the need for a mysql database to run on the mirror.
i have made a php script that takes the filename as an argument, and let's you download the file from your site (mirror). if the file is not present at your site, it tries to fetch it from plus4chan and then let the user download it from you. that saves time in updating my mirror, when it is eventually added, and nothing changes in the directory structure of plus4chan ;)
no mysql needed, just one directory and a php file.

Try that one out.
>> TwystNeko
Yea. Pepakura.info is mine, and I tend to hang out in #origami on efnet, as well. Right now, contributions to the site are completely open - Once you register, you can add models.

Now, this doesn't mean "zomg spam it wif 47 pages of my one creation" like certain Netzero people we know. BUT. Here's what I'm currently building into the site:

1. Model directory. I'm willing to host files, if they don't have a permanent home. I've even made it easy. But for stuff like the Canon papercraft, it's got a permanent home. Link to it there. (also, downloading won't ever require registration.)

2. User galleries. Once this is done (it's about 90% right now), signing up will give you your very own gallery, to put all your photos into.

3. Forums. 4chan's great for sharing stuff, but with threads expiring, it's hard to keep a constant discussion, and reposts are everywhere. Plus4chan seems to be on hiatus.

4. A wiki, perhaps. At the very least, a knowledgebase or FAQ listing.

So, yea. Delusions of grandeur? Perhaps. Wanting to make a tasty site? Oh yes.

>>17654If you're referring to the Airwolf model, please note that Finalpaper and Botpa both posted it on their sites in the last week.
Ah, the "they did it too" excuse; very... mature... Stopped using that when I was five I think...

Some people *do* ask for permission though: http://www.dpileggispicks.com/will_aldridge_airwolf/index.html

But seriously though: I don't really think the site has been shut down, just some technical difficulties probably. Hopefully it doesn't suffer the same faith as Plus4Chan.
I'm not too worried though, since there'll always be /po/ !!
>> TwystNeko
Actually, what happened to Pepakura Kingdom had nothing to do with the content. My server's in the same rack that 4Chan is, and when the electric spike that took us both down hit, the hard drive in my server got damaged.

As for the models, well.. Half of the problem is that people were UPLOADING files that didn't need to be. Other models, apart from the Airwolf one, were the Akira model, and the Chikage one. The former's only allowed to be on one specific site, (but linking is JUST FINE) and the other's commercial.

I'm going to work on getting the site back up wednesday or so - need to get a new hard drive in there.

Policy Enforcement (v2)

There's been a lot of confusion and disapproval about the "new rules", so I'd like to clear things up and revise the policy slightly. When you bump a thread in /b/, it takes longer for it to die. So if you bump a thread with illegal content, that illegal content stays on the board longer, and 4chan gets angry letters. Rather than relying on the moderators working around the clock on every board to delete things, we're asking for your help to make 4chan's system work.

To discourage participation in illegal threads, it's now against the rules to reply to a thread with illegal content. If you post in these threads, you will be banned for 2 weeks, regardless of whether you "contributed" to the thread or not. If you see a thread that breaks these rules, just report it and ignore it.

In addition, "Jailbait" threads, private forum/wiki invasions, and posting personal information are examples of things that aren't illegal but still open us to legal threats. We will not ban all replies to these threads, but we will delete them and issue bans to the thread starter or other major participants if necessary. The rules have not changed with regards to these borderline-legal threads.

Our goal is to keep 4chan foon and unrestrictive, so we hope that these common-sense rules won't be much of a burden.
