Hey /po/, I have a mission. I know this isn't your specialty (It's more of a civil engineering thing), but I figured since you're probably the most experienced in things of this nature, I should ask you.I need to build a bridge, that can support 10 KG. This bridge must be made entirely of 100 Popsicle sticks(Give or take a few)(Fuck, there goes my suspension idea). It must have a 10 cm clearance above ground, no center supports, and a 25 cm span. The max dimensions can be 40(L)cm x 10(W)cm x 22(H)cm. Free-standing bridges only. ALL PURPOSE WHITE GLUE ONLY!So, this is what I've come up with so far. I'm thinking of a Truss Bridge, with two non-fastened Truss supports(this means I'll just place the top on the two pillars). As you can see, I have drawn out plans for 3 pillars, and 2 truss designs. I estimated the popsicle sticks used, however accurate they may be.Any ideas on which pillar, which truss, and any improvements I can do?
Having /po/ do your homework now ? ;) I set a similar task to my students, and they are 13. And succeeded. You know what you have to do now !
I have a suggestion for you. Grind up the popsicle sticks and make paper out of them, then ask again.
>>151757I'm 20, this is for College. That's why it's only 100 sticks, and original req's were a Suspension Bridge before I decided it was impossible.
for when do you need it? give me till friday and I'll have your an arch bridge design
>>151766Cut them into individual fibres, then spin them into cables.
>>151768Archbridge out of popsicle sticks? I can break sticks in half, but I'm not allowed glue laminations or such. Also, this thing needs to be off the ground. It's due Monday.
I was in a competition for something like this before. Build a rectangle prism. Make it simple. Keep the sticks their full length. The triangle is the strongest shape. After reaching across build an arch on the top. You will move definitely hold the weight. play this game. http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/
Popsicle sticks? What kind of engineering school do you go to?
>>151795It's not engineering, it's just a mandatory physics class. I hate it too.
>>151790damn, i remember playing with that game in my physic class.
>>151818We never got to do anything fun in our Physics class. Even in highschool. The best things we got to play with were low-powered lasers.
>>151790I did this with spaghetti. We ended up getting alot of it, a roll of tape and taping the fuck out of the spaghetti. It held 7 kilograms before collapsing.
>>151818Pontifex was my addiction for a while in high school.
when I did this I used a drill and drill very tiny holes in the tips of the Popsicles, then used Popsicles splinters to "nail" the pieces together (where applicable). held ~45 lbs.thats my help.
>>151834Same here, spent a good year on that with my nerd-buddies.I always lost because I always ran the train into the water on purpose. God, the screams and blood I imagined back then...Gotta get me another copy of that.
>>151836OP Here, I wish I had a drill. Im limited to fucking WHITE GLUE, so I was just thinking of making the truss design and hoping for the best. No one has actually commented on my shitty blue prints and what I should do yet though.
