Hey /po/ I am just starting to get into papercraft and was wondering if u guys could offer some advice.

How much does the printer matter? I was looking at just getting the cheapest thing i could find, which would be this one from wal-mart

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9875754

Also, does the kind of hobby knife matter? or can i just use an Xacto knife, and seeing that those are sharp, what kind of surface do u guys work on?

Thanks for any advice.

Well to your first question: The printer... You want to get a printer that prints on paper. Get 65 lb or 110 lb card stock for paper craft use the xacto knife and scissors to cut with and get a self healing paper cutting board

http://www.google.com/products?q=self+healing+cutting+boards&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.m
ozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=
1&ct=title

Then find some paper crafts worthy of a 12 year old to start then move on to bigger things

Fiskars has cutting and such, but what about printer?
>> Nomad !!jG6ZvayWdrD
any printer will do...the higher dpi the better but more money too

Thanks, but, sorry to ask, what is the self heating cutting board for? Couldnt i just get a cork table top?
>> Nomad !!jG6ZvayWdrD
you could carry the board with you, with cork when you cut into it your knife could get stuck in a rut and ruin your line
>> Anonymous
>>185086
Good advice, but why self heating? Why not just a regular one then?
>> Anonymous
>>185088
so you don't get snagged in the cuts
>> Nomad !!jG6ZvayWdrD
self HEALING the cuts kinda go away, anything else the cuts will stay meaning your knife can and will get stuck in the an old cut which make cutting a straight line aggravating.

Oh, dont mind me, i'm a retard. thanks for all the advice guys. I guess ya gotta spend a bit of money if ya really want to take up a hobby eh?

Mostly just gonna start on a few from

www.cubeecraft.com since alot of those are nice and easy to start with.

Then I plan on doing the Security camera and Turret from Portal.
>> Nomad !!jG6ZvayWdrD
Well the printer $40, board $5, Xacto Knife $7, Paper $15, and printer ink $40 that comes to $107

not bad considering the amount of models you can produce if you have skill in conserving ink through draft/normal quality and such.
>> Nomad !!jG6ZvayWdrD

hehe, thats awesome dude. When you first started, did u have any trouble with your folds and fitting slits inside?

When i did my first cubeecraft.com one, it was bender, and I had alot of trouble sticking the small slit into the cut when folding and it practically fell apart after i finished it. How do ya fix that?
>> Nomad !!jG6ZvayWdrD
well the "flaps sometimes over lap each other so I cut off parts that over lap, I use super glue to glue all the flaps down and usually one flap at a time, just remember you need room to glue other than that. With Cubees I cut the what line for the wholes to the size of my flap. You want the whole just a bit smaller than the falp so that it locks in, put the tab in the whole one side at a time if all else fells glue it together
>> Nomad !!jG6ZvayWdrD
not what line white line sorry and yea one side at a time they will lock in like a gift box

for a printer, dont look at the quality, if it can print 300dpi its fin for almost all purpases. look at its ink, if you can get it refilled and how much it prints, trust me, those are far more important than printer quality.

and my first thing was ffIX vivi made on 20lbs resume paper, it had cotten and shit in it so it was thcker, sence than i moved onto cardstock110lbs stuff, realy good shit.

the most important thing is instructions for the models, trust me, makeing something without instructions and a shitty picture is a BITCH, couldent finish my adult link because of that.

I concur, instructions help immensely. Failing that, several detailed pictures from different angles will help you see where certain pieces go, what they attach to, etc.
