Tonberry's eyes. Any better way to make them? I ran out of ideas.
>> Anonymous
A better way?? You mean the best way: just an eye texture on the face. Don't overcomplicate a model, it doesn't get any better by doing so.

No way. A Tonberry without protruding eyes in not a Tonberry. Yes, most models would be good with the textures, but not this one.

Sure, EVERY model would look good like that, except how coincidental just exactly the one YOU're making. Fine, make it more difficult than it needs to be. ;)
So, how big is it gonna be? There's basically two ways to make a dome (which is basically what you're trying to make). Truncated domes like you're doing here, or "petals" like in the picture I'm attaching. Cones are easier, petals often look better (if you can build them right, since it's harder).

That will make an incredibly awesome Master Tonberry. I would shy away from having the face go inward where you have to attach the eye. That would be best served by a little shading, since the inward dip isn't a deep one.

Some reptile-like papercraft would probably help for ideas. If anyone wants to share templates they might have in their inventory, that would be great. It would allow us to see the various ways others have dealt with this and other problems like it.

I have one request with the protruding eyes. Put tabs on the ends of the eye that attaches to the face, but don't give them a bottom to attach to. In other words, keep the eyes an open object. If the eyes are made into a closed object, then they will not adhere as well to the face, and will not work as well with the curves of the face.

Petals would be too complicated for the small size that the eyes will be. Already considered.
And about the difficulty, the "cone" eyes will not just be easier than petals (and most of things I have considered), they will be just plain easy.

lol I can't really tell this yet just from OP. But I wish anyone that wishes to create a new papercraft good luck, so this one as well. Just textures like>>63443said can look very good and probably a lot better than you're thinking and would be a lot easier obviously. If you can get it to work fine then that's that of course, just don't scale up your entire papercraft because otherwise the eyes will be too small to build. That's not a solution, it's just poor designing. But like I said, maybe you don't even need to do that and the eyes are fine like this. Testbuild, it's the best way to find out if you have questions like this.

Then what's your question again?? Sounds like you already know what you want to do.
Next time just say: "hey /po/, I'm making a Tonberry!"

what other things have you considered?

Well, there face does not go inward at specified point. It might look like it does on the image, but it doesn't.

No problem. Trying to attach Seph's (first version) hair taught me about this.

Bad solutions, listing them is not worth my time.

/po/ demands to know!!

>>63449
I was requesting better solutions for making eyes, as said in first post. Bit it looks like I'll stick with the "cone".
>>63453
Icosahedron, dodecahedron, slightly protruding circle, among others.
>> Anonymous
>>63454Icosahedron, dodecahedron, slightly protruding circle
Those are just cones, only "real" cones have an infinite number of sides, and these have just a small number of sides. It's the easiest solution I think so it should work.
How big is it going to be though?
>> Sane Person
>>63455
About 1,5 cm in diameter. Icosahedron would be impossible to make, and dodecahedron would require too much cutting, pushing, pulling and other operations that would make either the eye or the face look horrible.
>> Anonymous
hey why dont you just make a cone to cut out and then you make it, then cut the top of and put a small round piece on the top for an easy solution
>> Anonymous
>>63457
I was talking about the entire model, but this can be a good indication. ;p)
>> Anonymous
>>63458
That basically IS what he's doing. ;)
>> Sane Person
>>63459
28-30 cm
>> Anonymous
>>63461
Thanks, from the eyes being 1,5 cm, I determined the head would be about 10 cm, and the entire model 20-30 cm, depending on which Tonberry version of course. So not a bad estimate eh? ;)

>>63442
use geosphere and cut it in half. tadaa!
>> Anonymous
>>63466
In the end you still end up with basically the same as he's doing now...
Making domes: truncated cones or petals. Seriously. That's how you make a papercraft dome. Whatever software you use.

I think it looks good as is(tonberry's are cute) but i think we would all see what you are trying to better if it had some plain reference colors. so if we could just see the skin part green and the eyes yellow, we could envision what you are doing better.

Still had PhotoShop open from my other good deed (>>63471), so I did this quickie as well (so I don't have to take the trash out tomorrow either ;o).

See, it looks really good. i say leave it as is. thank you for the demonstration.
>>63461
Sounds like this model is going to be a big one too.

Yeah: huge Tonberry is huuuge! ;o)

Wow I can't wait for the HUEG Tonberry! Bump!
