The way they were, they would be dead simple: it would be a circle or oval with a cut, and you slide one part underneath the other and that's that.
Not difficult, it just looks crappy. It's one of those details that many people add because they think "there are not enough parts maybe it looks a bit plain, the more details, the better my papercraft." Luckily pongoo came to his senses in time. ;) It will look better without it.

No doubt your modeling is great, but there are a few things that need to be fixed for papercrafting.... Quite a few faces are running inside other faces, while others aren't connected at all, most notably in the head.

Other than that it looks really great! Thanks again for releasing the 3D model data, it's cool that people can make different poses and mods to a model to make them unique. =]

I broke the model up into many (read 30) parts to make simplification/unfolding easier. >> Anonymous
>>182119
Just the head for now, i'd like to eventually somehow stick an LCD or CRT in there.
It's taking awhile to clean up the 3d of the head, so i wouldn't mind of someone else got the body figured out before i do any sizing up.
But regardless i'll post any plans of the head i got so far, i'm trying to have the biggest pieces take up most of a piece of cardstock. Oh yeah, and it needs to get properly textured.
>> Anonymous
I'd like the full resized version- hell, if it can be resized to 6', I'd actually take the plans over to the nearby office max and get it printed on the giant roll printer... might cost me a bit, but for this I'd be willing to make a sacrifice or two!
>> dai
I can toy around with it later in pepakura... a 6' would be amazing, and a great showpiece if I took it to a convention... but if we make a gigantic version, we need gigantic high-res textures. I'll get on it!
>> dai
looking into good ways to do a lifesize... I might actually use the papercraft as a textureless basis and work it over to strengthen it, using fiberglass and such. Spraypaint and airbrushing will be done to finish it. If I can get it right, it will look absolutely awesome.

even better, I want to try and figure out how to make resistant joints so it can be articulated into new poses without needing to make a whole new model.

to get as far as this, I'm going to have to revamp the 3d model, but no big deal. Any progress I make will be posted later.

Oh, by the way, the .obj file pongoo uploaded needs to be imported through the file menu if you're using 3ds Max, not just simply drag/dropped into the program. Drag/drop crashes max on several of my computers, so I did a manual import and checked "import as single mesh" to get it to work.
>> pelic4n
On the topic of custom coloured versions, has anything been done yet? Because I think tonight I'll do a "midnight black" and urban camo canti.
>> dai
>>182261

if it's worth anything, once I get the model re-textured in 3dStudio, I can re-release the model with texture coordinates and the applied textures for ease of re-making.

Hell, I should just add a bone setup for character studio so you can pose it too. That would be helpful for making the papercraft version too, I suppose.

sounds good

one thing i need some more info on: when the model is this much bigger, the 110 lb. cardstock seems a bit too flimsy, dunno what else to use that can be printable.

Also, when the model is now this huge, it seems a shame to not have way more detail instead of giant folds. But that i believe is for another time after this one is well and done, since it would be a real challenge to build.
>> Octo
Try making some triangular tubes out of scrap card, glue those to the large faces that are prone to being floppy. It should help out quite a bit.
>> dai
     File :-(, x)
>>182294

for my first large papercraft, I only had some weak 20# paper at my disposal, so what I did was when I printed it out, I laced the back of the cutouts (while still uncut) with duct tape.

seemed like a good idea in theory.

turned out like a big floppy roll of wet newspaper.

What I did from there was find a bunch of barbecue skewers and use them cleverly inside the structure to create good support. Still kind of floppy, but it was actually holdable how you needed to hold it.

Probably would have been better off just leaving it as floppy paper.

I usually do my stuff in 24#, even the large things seem to reinforce themselves just from the folds.

pic related, shoutout to Chamoo232
>> Anonymous
>>182302
>>182299
good ideas, perhaps i could also model some support framework inside, some triangular tube stuff, since this huge head is so hollow.
great grav gun btw
>> Anonymous
>>182302
you could also if you knew what you were dooing is use, the incolation foam, forget what its called in the cardstock, it should be strong enough to keep shape while the foam is expanding
>> dai
     File :-(, x)
>>182336

done it before, the stuff I used ("Great Stuff") bled through the paper and ruined the print, and even with a LITTLE of the stuff it ended up expanding the edges of the model.

I don't know about other foams, but Great Stuff is a menace to /po/ and it's interests.
>> Octo
Anyone who's ever used Great Stuff for its intended purpose could have told you it was a bad idea... Stuff expands like mad, and yes, it's really goopy until it sets.

However, it is fun to sculpt stuff with, as you can just make a giant pile, let it do its thing, and then carve it. I might make permanent Jack-o-Lanterns with it, but would need to be fireproofed.

have fun... putting in my two cents-

if you're going cheap...

cheapest and most effective way to avoid problems with the whole lower torso/hip area is to use the big torn tarp to cover up a good portion of your body. Makes it easier/faster to put it on, too, since you only need the legs, forearms, and head.

non-cheap way...

Well, due to the lack of updates, I'm just going to mention where I am with updating this-

I have cleaned up the model in max, since when you import it from obj, half of the faces are facing the wrong way and you get a rather ugly looking model (no offense pongoo, I know it looks good otherwise!)

SO, everything is cleaned up in .max format, and I am currently working on setting up a bone system for posing, and setting up basic textures.

I hope to make it a bit higher poly for the sake of those of you who are doing the custom skinning stuff.

When I've finished all of the updates, I can re-release it in a few file formats, at request (the character bone system will only work in max, though.)

slowly reconstructing the model from scratch, using Pongoo's as a size placeholder (since I don't have a physical model for reference).

Head's near complete (still a few things to clean up, and I need to add the grill on the "mouth")

body is done with shape, texture will be done soon.

arms are almost done. Did a bit of extra work on the inner arm to make it look fancier (found some reference pictures for the detail). I still need to work out the shape of the upper arm, as well as put down that fancy symbol.

the lower torso, hips, and legs are still the original model in this image, I will work my way towards them soon enough.

I'm hoping that for the guys who want to do a Life-Sized version of kanti, this higher detail version will be welcome. It would be absurd to do this on a small model, but the folds would be an easy-to-work-with size on a big one, and would produce a MUCH more pleasing result.

Once modeling is done I'll set up the bone structure for easy posing.

just woke back up, figured I'd update- The model is coming along nicely, though since I updated last not much has changed visually.

I'm trying hard to get the pelvis remade, since the version for the papercraft was EXTREMELY low poly compared to what I figure would be a good norm for an upscale build, or a high-res 3d render.

just a quick question:

how many of you have 3ds Max 2009? I just realized I've been working it over in '09, and that means that the max file will only work in '09, so I'd like to hear who'd still be able to use the extra features like the bone setup and the "Pro-Materials" I've been using?
>> Anonymous
>>184260
I have Modo & Maya, but can get access to Max 09 if need be
>> dai

Good, good. I suppose finding a trial would work if anything. Maya and Max are slowly moving together though, so it might be a good idea to get used to 3d studio's interface and workflow, and vice versa if you're a max user and need maya.

If you get it in .pdo format, you can technically resize it to whatever you want in the program and have it re-layout everything.

I use the pepakura program as the instructions, if you wanna put it that way- long story short, there's a button called "Check Corresponding Face" (or you can hit CTRL+K), and what it does is it allows you to click a piece of the model in the 3d view, then see which piece is which on the sheets.

attached picture shows it in action. here's a pic of a model being constructed using this method. (shows that you should probably keep your papers organized)

Don't forget in PD3, there's an option to show which sides you glue together.

ok (sorry to keep bothering you guys and asking stupid questions) so this is all of canti? there's nothing missing at all?

...Did I mention sexy?

yes, and no-

the file Pongoo provided include:
•kanti (of course)
•Lord Kanti's jacket with wings and halo
•Gibson FLCL style guitar

the only thing really "Missing" is a few of the technical details that would be murder on the hands to do a papercraft of on such a tiny scale... but for the upscalers around here who are looking to do a huge model, I'm working on making a version with all of the little details.

tested the texture change compatibility.

it works.

sweeet, with the simple drag and drop of these convenient multi-sub-object materials, you can instantly transform canti's skin from one to the next!

I'll be including the two original colors from the anime, but if you'll notice, you can customize each material individually to create a whole new skin!

truly awesome
don't forget the double M pattern on the top of the chest

it's a smaller detail, so I'm doing it along with a few things like the panel indentations on the side of the spine/hip section.

I was looking through the .pdo and I'm having trouble figuring out wear some of the parts go, so will you have some simple instructions to explain how to combine the pieces?
