Yeah, that does look like its assembles better. I'm a total papercraft noob, so...
The reason for the heavy forehead geometry was that the original fold lines were to be along the larger splits in the woodgrain, but I couldn't get it to texture properly.
I have a few reference images of the original props (and some made from the same molds) but in the end the OP's pic gave me the best front-on shot for texturing, so I used that when modeling. It's by no means perfect, however, as it doesn't have that twisted little "L" logo in the top circle, and I obviously didn't bother with the metal bolts beneath that, pushing it further away from the original.
But, for a pdo, I don't think it's too bad.
