continued from previous companion cube thread..

here's an edit of the corners to make things easier. Personally, I found it easy to just cut the tabs off entirely and apply glue to the edges of the paper, it makes for a much cleaner look if done well.

Made it all the way to Kotaku.

Lots of game papercrafts have, apparantly it's the new "game cake". ;)

Unfortunately, all the people there want is to make a name for themselves by posting a new item, and they don't bother to check it or at least build it themselves first, or else they would have noticed the flaw with the curves...
This is how "beta" papercrafts get so widely spread and turn up instead of the fixed version every time some noob requests it... :((

Quick question to the people who have made this:
How did you apply the glue to the tiny pieces on the corners and whatnot? I used an Elmer's glue stick for the actual cube, but it seems too bulky for this.

On the template, the are lots of places of cardstock that you aren't going to use.
Cut out thin strips, apply a drop of glue on the tip of the strip, then apply the glue using the strip to the small flaps.
Or use a toothpick.
Or anything else that works. ;)

Oh, and don't use a glue stick.
Well, use it if it works well for you.
But most people use that white PVA glue (regular papercrafts glue). Carpenter's woodglue (dunno if there's difference between PVA paper glue or wood glue?) works well too, so if you don't have PVA paper glue right now, and don't want to buy some, go in your dad's toolshed to find out where he keeps his woodglue.
DO NOT USE A LOT. It will spill when you press the parts together and make a mess. Use a small amount, almost dry, and it will stick very well. If it doesn't (if you waited too long and it's TOO dry, apply glue again. Simple.

lol the camera isn't bad, it's on a phone and it was taken in complete dark and i forgot to use macro mode.

the camera on the phone is capable of a lot more than that, I just lazed out for the picture.

better picture

never done any of this sort of thing before, but now I really want to try.
>> Anonymous
yeah there has to be a better way of making the corners. stick the images onto thick cardboard, and stick the cardboard on the cube?
>> Anonymous
Know what i might do?
I'm sure my printing teacher wouldn't mind much.
If I can get this on one of his computers I can make a big ass cake cube for /po/ to have sex with.

btw, the heart on the right most flap is upside down. it points the same way as all the others.

It's a lil ugly but I love it anyway. (my first papercraft)

Now where's the cake....

This seems like a lot of people's first papercraft (including mine). Afterwards, I looked around and saw quite a few that would have been better to start with, but I'm glad I did mine.

My dog chewed on it, though. I'm considering shooting him in the face.

it was my second. took about 5 hours straight for me, but i was using huge scissors because i dont have an xacto :( i do agree though, not one of the best to start on, but it was like speed learning.

Done.
>> Anonymous
why is it necessary to have the dotted lines on the crowbar, papercraft is for presentation and thats what line guides are for, so you can see where the lines are and then fold it on an unlined template. I think that guy has put more effort into his site than his craft.

amazing...

the photopaper i used for mine (worst two pictures) was a serious mistake hahaha.

the superglue just doesn't stick to shiny sides and it doesn't hold a shape well, and is too sharply cut. complete mistake for a first material, was looking for a heavier paper but could only find bumwad paper and photopaper.
>> Anonymous
i would love to have some papercraft portal turrets to go with the cube, that would be pretty amazing

Agreed, turrets and GLaDOS would be great.

Why these preliminary templates are not just marked as such. Like, with a big font or something.

Same printer here. Shit sucks.

I use photopaper (glossy) and UHU all purpose glue. It's not as strong as superglue and rubs off when not dry so it's pretty perfect. (although as you can see with mine it's not 100%)
