So who here has done the 1000 cranes for good luck? Who/what were they for?

These I made for a female friend for x-mas a few years ago. Each is numbered under one of it's wings. :)

less blurry image of them in a box

...good god, sir. Just...damn fine.

This is cool and all, but I mean, what do you do with them once you've folded them all? Throw them away? Keep them in a box forever?

She decorated her room with some of them. Taped them on the walls and hung them from the ceiling; stuff like that.

Most of the time you poke strings through number of them (like maybe a 100 per string), then tie the strings together so yo almost get a bell shape cluster of birds. That cluster can then be hung somewhere. Like after 9/11, the fences around ground zero had dozens (if not hundreds, I didn't see the whole fenced area when I was there) of these 1000 bird clusters.

I made it a point to make around 20 a day, so it took about 2 months. I make them any time my hands were relatively idle... watching movies, playing a MMO, waiting for a class to start, at red lights while driving.

The greatest factor in me getting it done was my reasons for doing it though. I knew it would a fun and weird gift that came from the heart and that she'd really appreciate (which she did), so making them was wasn't a drag at all.

and, err, thanks about the Bokken.. It's not a set though.. just a Bokken and Shinai... I did Kendo (the pic is of my armor) for a few years (no dojo where I live now so it's on hold). The shinai is used for actually hitting others, the bokken is just for strength building exercises and non-contact technique practice...

I can't look at those crane things ever since I saw Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd Gig.

Gah, does anyone have an image explaining how to make paper oragami cranes? Website with tips? blahlbhalhbal etc.?

Height of laziness. Traditional paper cranes are the easiest thing in the world to find on the net... well, just about. When in doubt, I send folks to the Canon site. http://cp.c-ij.com/english/3D-papercraft/origami/crane_e.html should do the trick. Enjoy.

That's so sweet!
I think I'd about die of happy if I received a box of paper cranes like that as a gift. I mean anyone can go out and BUY something, but to spend two months on a gift so simple REALLY conveys affection. Kudos!
Just thought I'd say. :>

Arnt you supposed to thread them all together ? Not of course that that detracts from the shere awesomeness of it all.

Just kidding, of course. This is awesome, and a great idea [/tradition/folk-thing.]

The cranes should be smaller and they should fill a large jar that someone can put on a shelf... a box full of odd shaped cranes is a sweet gesture but totally impractical...

Eh where? I can't see any numbers on any crane in that picture.

They are pretty hard to see because of the blurriness of the image, I can make out numbering on about 8 or soo birds (though I can't actually see the numbers). Here is a non-blurry version I had taken. You can clearly see a lot of the numbers in it. I guess they are more on the chest of the bird than the wing...

Hrm, I might make 1k for a girl I like. I have allready made her a papercraft present allready though, hopefully this will be different enough.
>> MobTail
that's love right there, man. good job! i'm quite impressed by your papercraft skills and patience.

Very sweet idea... I'd love to try it for someone I like, but I think a. She wouldn't understand, and b. think it's too much, since we're just friends at the moment ^^;

I've never been able to make a paper crane. :(

If I could, though, I would totally make a thousand for this girl I know. *nod*

Ohgod.
That episode made me cry.

good going, I always keep a stack of origami paper lying near the computer, and fold for the therapeutic value of it more than anything else. I wish I had thought of the number the wings idea, I just have a box full with a bunch of tally marks on it, 483 at the moment.

Your post reminds me that we definitely NEED Sadako papercraft, preferrably climbing out of a television.
>> Sadako Papercraft Prons
Actually, I did a Sadako origami once, I used one of the oldschool mario papercrafts to do it, I simply blanked out the face and hat, drew in an eye (A circle and line tool on MS paint) and made a black upside down U shape for the hair. I can take a picture of it if someone is interested.

4k in high school, 1k a year, took 2-3 months each. Threaded 'em together, still have the last batch. Gave 'em away once the wishes came true.

lawl, what did you wish for?

>>19990
So, you bought 1000 pieces of square, expensive quality "origami paper"? Grr you rich whiteys ;_;
>> Anonymous
>>20331
That's really depressing. ._.
>> Anonymous
>>20531
haha yea, I bought the papers... they weren't expensive at all though <.< I mean.. I know I didn't pay more than $20 for all of them.
Some cost like $10 for 50 sheets, but you can also get 800+ for $5...

>>20331
That's really sad... I would have been heart-broken.

>>20525
Wow! That's crazy! 4k! So all your wishes came true?
>> Anonymous
For those who do 1k, how big should the squares be? I know the sheets that they sell in those "How to Oragami" make pretty big ones
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>20802
I'm doing the project with 50x50 mm sheets. The cranes are about the size of a quarter, ideal for subdued displays or gifting. You could use bigger paper, but the little sheets are convenient and cheap. Packs of 500 sheets are a dollar each at Asian stationery stores!

>>20809
How on earth can you fold them that small?
I folded my first a few days ago and have since folded a few more and even though I've memorized how to do it they still look kind of wonky. But then I'm using regular printer paper, which is probably thicker...
>> Anonymous
>>20846
I did my first one on printer paper, and it lost most of it's structural integrity by the end, so when I tried to expand the "body", it just stayed nasty and wrinkled.
