You're right, you won't have to start making the 3D model from scratch, but I think that would be better actually... That way you'd be in complete control to make a 3D model that you know will be suited to unfold in Pepakura easily. Many of us aren't experienced in 3D modelling, so we go for the second best option (ripping models and editing them), but since you ARE experienced in 3D modelling, why go for the *second best* option? If you want to do things good, it takes time. If you want to make a lot of money fast, designing papercrafts on commission is not the way to go I'm afraid...
