Red Mage(FFXI) Papercraft! Anonymous
I'm looking for a papercraft for a Red Mage hat! Or, if there is a way to convert the in game models to LightWave.

This is the only one I've ever been able to find but it's got lines all over it and it's only the first hat, I'm also looking for the 2nd one.

My first papercraft, it looks alright but it's a bit misshapen. :( Still need to find the AF2 hat.

You know, I actually just put together a .pdo of a full size Red Mage AF hat. I could also do the AF2 if you like.

I posted a comment on your blog asking for some advice, but I ended up deciding to just forge ahead on my own with some models.

If anyone's interested, I've also done most of the other AF helms, but I've only testbuilt the Wizard's Petasos, which was a bit small for my liking, so I sized it up.

The next few items on my build queue are your Goblin and Goblin's Coif. If they turn out well, I really wanna try some other stuff I've been playing with (Ark Angel set).

Oh, I'm sorry. I only ever check my blog when I post on it. Wasn't ignoring you or anything. You can ask me anything right now.

Also, you've already done most of the others? THANK YOU. I was JUST about to go do a ton of the others, and you've saved me some time.

I've got a different hat I was working on. I think I'll start finishing it right now and release it once I'm done.

Oh I only posted like...a day or so ago? I got a little anxious >_>
Ended up reinstalling the entire game after not having touched it for a year, and I just kinda went nuts. I've got most of the AF helms, as well as a Nomad Moogle, Magic Doll (the annoying talking one from some of the BLM AF quests) and some other stuff mocked up. I guess I'll get to organizing and posting some of them.

Pic is the only one I've test built so far.
>> GoblinGuy
>>153904
Nomad Moogle? The Moogle cap? I would love you forever if you made that, because for some reason it's not on my model list, no matter which directory folder I point it to.

Good job on that one, though! It's funny, but I was actually only a few seconds away from making that one just yesterday! Something told me not to right now, and I guess this is why. ;)

It's great to have someone else making FFXI papercrafts. It was kind of lonely on my side of the field.
>> Kaizo
Well the Nomad Moogle was under one of those groups the modelviewer tells you to chang the ROM path. As for the Moogle cap, I can't get it either. Hell, I haven't played in a year, so I haven't even seen the thing. I'm dying to know.

I'm not sure about the size, I think it'd a bit small for me, but I have a big head, so it's probably just right. It's got the same issue as the Summoner's horn in that it's not a hat, it just magically attaches to the face. So I've included some straps.
>> Kaizo
>>153924
As for requests, I don't want it getting out of hand, and I definitely don't want to steal GoblinGuy's thunder, but I think it might be fun to set up a blog and take requests. Just know, I'm not editing the models in any spectacular way. I don't care for simple builds. If it takes me a week to complete, it just makes the final reward that much better.

Ok, a fullsize lance is just too ridiculous. If you want a little novelty item to maybe keep around as a gag, sure, but making something close to real size out of paper is just...it's too crazy.

This is as reasonable as it gets before I start adding in polygons. It's not like it'd have structural integrity to begin with, but if I added more folds, it'd just lose the plot entirely.

>> GoblinGuy
     File :-(, x)
Woaaaah. That was a lot of models released really fast. But you have to take time to at least look at what you're building. I don't mean to be rude by saying this, but take the flags for example.

Look at the stands. They look nice, but when you hide some faces, you realize the model is going through itself. In very many places. Meaning there's no way to connect these parts to one another to get it to look exactly like the model.

Be aware of red lines. Every red line that shows up in Pepakura is a place where the model doesn't connect to anywhere. And these are quite prevalent in FFXI models. I'm not trying to downplay anything you're doing, you're doing great, actually.
>> Kaizo
>>154120
Yeah, it should be noted that the only thing I've testbuilt of the lot is the Black Mage's hat.
I was hoping the flag base wasn't too ridiculous, but I concede I haven't looked into it too much.
Most of the instances of floating pieces were addressed in the AF helms though.
>> GoblinGuy
>>154122
Ah, all right. Just wanted you to know, is all. :)
>> Kaizo
     File :-(, x)
I think in the case of the flag bases, you'll need to do like the rear propeller blades on the Highwind model, and cut holes through the hexagonal shapes to insert the flagpole
>> GoblinGuy
>>154125
Yeah, but then you have the problem of the bases that support the pole. They still go through everything else, so just sticking them on the outside would look goofy.
>> Kaizo
Well it doesn't look like they intersect by too much...
The best way would be to take the shapes and cut the edges out in a pattern that fits the ridges.
But I don't know how to do that other than including them outside the .pdo, just as an extra page.
>> Anonymous
This has got to be the best thread ever. ITT utter win.
>> Anonymous
neone got full highwind?
>> Kaizo
     File :-(, x)
Ok, my sleeping habits are really weird, so I'm dead tired, but I'm determined to make this flag issue work. I think it'll look alright keeping the base outside of the pole, just avoiding intersection entirely, but I've come to a bit of an impass....where the hell does this highlighted piece go? and the two others like it? When checking corresponding faces, it doesn't show up on the model. Is it completely inside something else? In which case, I'm just not using it, and should probably update the readme for the file accordingly...

Any suggestions Goblin Dood?
>> Kaizo
>>154148
Also, what do you mean by "full?"
>> GoblinGuy
>>154150
It's the side of the support beams facing the inside of the pole, meaning, the part you can't see. There should also be 3 faces that don't connect to anything on any side. These pieces go straight through the 3 support beams, so you would have to cut a slit in them or something.

It's hard to explain without showing a 3D rotate. Pictures aren't good enough.
>> Kaizo
>>154157
Gotcha, I see the face now that you've pointed it out...so to speak. As for three faces, I'm not sure about those. I'm still going to try just attaching the supports on the outside without any modification. If necessary, I'm gonna try to trim the pieces that need grooves in them.
>> GoblinGuy
>>154160
All right. Good luck!
>> Anonymous
>>154099

>>154165
I don't much like the look of this thing. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I arranged the pages, but I don't like seeing so many little sliver tabs. If you're willing to wait, I can get something much better tomorrow morning, and maybe get some basic instructions...or at least arrange the pieces so their construction is more obvious than jumbled pieces.

this is why a lot of /po/ fails. no test builds = horrible models. tossing them into pepakura doesn't do anything lol
>> Kaizo
     File :-(, x)
It ain't pretty, but it's a proof of concept.
I'd just like to remind anyone reading that, these are basically models I've extracted for my own use. I've made no attempt to modify or simplify for ease of constructed, because on my own time, I'm willing to work through difficulties (such as intersecting faces) to get the end result.
If you're not interested in trying your luck with an untested model, or aren't willing to work through it on your own, then move along, and kindly keep your trap shut.
I'll be posting the properly unfolded Nomad Moogle as well as the regular house Moogle in about an hour in both .pdo and .pdf forms, here and on the blog.

>>154317
no. you're wrong. i'm helping you. every good papercraft creator will tell you that it is both a good idea to

A) spend time with your model
B) test build your model

if you don't it's likely to turn out shitty, like, as shown, all of those flags, and who knows what other models you released in this thread that are messed up in a thousand places.
>> Kaizo
>>154320
I've never claimed any of these are any good. They are what you see. If you think they're shit, don't build them. I'm willing to give them a shot, and learn from the mistakes, and gather advice along the way. Personally, I don't think trolling a thread is helping someone, but whatever, I'll chalk it up as questionable advice. I've prefaced everything here with "I have not testbuilt this, so try it at your own risk." If someone else released a thread full of untested content that I was interested in, I'd be willing to give the models a shot and give constructive feedback, like GoblinGuy did. What you're doing is just looking for a fight. For God's sake, you actually said "I guess we know who won this one."
Just, do us a favor, and bugger off.
>> Anonymous
>>154323
then why the hell would you release something without knowing if it was

a)good
b)buildable

because all that does is add 1,000 different "updated" versions. see super mario galaxy luma. that one was submitted to rapidshare about 8 different times because the creator didn't test build.
>> Kaizo
Would you like me to start a new thread titled "untested stuff I'm looking for feedback on?"
I'm comfortable with that. Anyone reading this:

MY MODELS ARE UNTESTED. DO YOU LIKE FINAL FANTASY XI? MAYBE YOU'D ENJOY HELPING ME TESTBUILD, I'D LOVE THE FEEDBACK.
>> Anonymous
>>154327
hey anonymous who built my model for the third time! any problems with it this time? well let me just fix that and - done! all right, that's fix number 12, you can go ahead and make the "real" version now!

or

hey guys! here's this model! don't worry about anything, i've already tested and made sure everything is in tip-top shape for you guys! enjoy!

you can't tell me the first part sounds better.
>> Kaizo
Which is precisely why I started that blog. Any problems, leave comments, and I'll address them. I'm not claiming these are finished releases. If I claimed they were guaranteed buildable releases, I'd be a liar, but I've never claimed that. So once again, anyone reading, you attempt these completely untested models at your own risk. You are not working on finished models, you're helping me develop models under construction. If you find problems, take them to the blog at http://kaizopapercraft.blogspot.com/ and I'll use your feedback in developing the models.

So one last time. These are not finished models. They're not "releases." They're under construction, and I'm looking for help in developing them further.
>> Kaizo
And I think I finally see your issue. At this point, I will cease to post on /po/.

Any further developments, ideas, extractions, any of that, they will only be posted on the blog.

/po/ is for finished release announcements, so no more of me. Thanks for the chance to get the ideas out before they were shot all to hell.

>>154330
like i said, that just leads to confusion. you've already put all of these "unfinished" versions on rapidshare. what if someone comes along one day and then finds 5 different versions of the model he wants, each with a very subtle difference?
>> Kaizo
Well as I'm not going to be posting them here anymore, only on the blog, where I can document each version, I don't see how he'd find them. Rapidshares don't last forever, and I can easily delete a previous version with each new release.

And here is the completed dragoon helm, had to play with it a little bit but I think it turned out alright.

lol you lost an hours work? I know papercrafters who spend months making a papercrafts... Losing an hour is nothing, don't get discouraged by it, just take breaks while working and take more time perfecting one papercraft before you move on to another and you'll be making good papercrafts in no time seeing as you do seem enthustiastic enough! ;)

Yes, but they aren't impatient idiots like I am.

Going to try to keep all future updates on the blog only. Post there if you've got questions about anything or want to post testbuilds of your own.

boy did you pick the wrong hobby lol... it's the only thing you really need, patience (well not the ONLY thing, but the most important thing lol)

looking good. Care to share?

>>154914
Oh I've got the patience to build things, I just got a little carried away with posting simple foundation .pdos before I had a chance to refine them.

>>154916
I'll be posting any revisions on the blog, so check back soon. I'm not going to post any more stuff on /po/ until I'm 100% sure of it's construction.
>> Prince of Dolls
These are so neat! Thanks for posting. I'm going to try and use a few of them as sewing patterns.

Would anyone be interested in making the Stormwaker automaton? I love that little guy.

This thread is hot and I love you, Kaizo.

I thought I'd throw that in.

I'll test a bunch of these over the summer.

I was thinking these may be fun for cosplayers and whatnot. Just know that they aren't perfect. I'm working on a Cardian right now that should work out just the way I want it to. Just finished the sealing up the body actually. After that I intend to go back through each AF helm and resize them (as Vivi and I have discovered they're all just the slightest bit too small,) and address all the instances of single planes, which leave white-backed pieces visible.

>>155595
I wouldn't mind mocking it up real quick and making sure it looks buildable, but I'm only going to post unfinished/untested stuff on the blog at
http://kaizopapercraft.blogspot.com/
so check there for the model.
On that note, I want to say again, if you have any requests, request them in the comments of the post, "Now taking requests" on the blog. No need to fill up /po/ with all that.

>>155599
I appreciate that...though it is a little unnerving...

What's the size of the AF helms as they are now?

I didn't see that, sorry. I don't lurk here as much as I used to. I saw this thread and it seems like a good distraction from the shitty time I've been having in-game.

This thread shouldn't be in page 6

Finished the Hunter's Beret. I had some problems here and there gluing, mostly because I used fairly light paper for a model as big as this, and I used too much glue in some places, causing warping. However, it turned out pretty nice. I'll try to get pictures up.
>> Kaizo
Well I've been trying to let this thread die, but since it keeps getting bumped...

I just got the most recent Model Viewer list, which means I can access WotG files (including Moogle caps), as well as furniture. I've been a bit distracted lately, but I'm finishing up the Cardian as I type this. I'll call it my first official release, once it's done.

I tried an Eald'narche model once, and it was looking great until it was sadly destroyed along with two angry cats from Azumanga Daioh. :(

>> tl;dr Anonymous
>>154421The only difference between "theoretical shit" and "declared buildable" is a picture of the finished model.
You and every other fan papercraft designer should aim higher than "declared buildable" please...
It's like edible and eatable.
Edible means you can eat it without dying from it.
Eatable means it's edible, and actually doesn't even taste all that bad.

If somebody posts a picture of a finished papercraft, then sure, it's "edible". It can be built. But it would be so much better to find out how you can make it "eatable": fun to build, so people will enjoy building it.
You should always build your models yourself, it's the only way to know if it is easy to build the way YOU imagined it: since others have no idea how YOU imagined it! lol
The problem is that testbuilders are always enthustiastic fans of the subject you made and they don't really care if it's "eatable": they will be satisfied if it's "edible" and will tell you it's great and they want to have your babies regardless if it's fun to build (they're the same people that will say these things long BEFORE they ever get to see a template; not a very reliable source for serious feedback).
>> tl;dr Anonymous
>>156756
Another group of potential testbuilders give more serious feedback, but it isn't really a good source either, because it's again a whole different group than your target group...
They are usually the kind of people from cardmodels.net and other "serious" forums, usually older and a lot more dedicated to the hobby. And that's the problem.
They're much more dedicated than your average 4Chan /po/rson. So if they say it's "eatable", that could mean it can be build in 4 months with tweezers and a magnifying glass, and they really enjoyed it and love the result!
But your target group (I think) is not them, but the average 4Chan /po/rson. And they HATE having to build models with tweezers. They want a much better build time<>looks ratio...
And the problem is, because of that: they don't want to be testbuilders. They want ready to print templates, with the testbuilding and more importantly all the fixing already done... The best man for that job is the designer himself. ;)
>> Kaizo
>>156756
>>156761
I agree, a dedicated fan of the subject is biased. But that's specifically who I'm doing this for. As I'm a dedicated fan, hell, even a somewhat obsessed one, I'm unbeleivably excited to see any of these brought to life. I don't really care about "eatable" because I don't care if the average "serious" builder judges me as a good designer or not.

Honestly, I never wanted to "release" a thing. I wanted to build them for myself and stick them on my shelf. But I saw the this thread the night after I first started unfolding stuff, and given the enthusiasm of other people responding, I thought maybe I'd share some of the things I had on my plate.

I do feel somewhat guilty about not building them all myself before releasing them into the wild, but I just don't have the time to do them all, and a lot of the damage is already done, as it's been pointed out.

I'd love to do requests for other dedicated fans, but I can't build everything asked of me. I'd rather extract, unfold as best I can without building, then release an unlocked .pdo and let anyone who knows what they're doing try their luck.

All I can really do is give fair warning beforehand.

Have fun with that. It's just about every model ingame, short of environments.

>I don't care if the average "serious" builder judges me as a good designer or not.

Actually, nobody cares if you personally are a good designer or not. They only care if your "obsession" for the game reflects your "obsession" with the crafts. And pumping them out this fast without test-building does not reflect that.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but how do I view the models?

I am kind of sick of this anon speaking for everyone, so I'm going to say this: The people who, like you, just want a physical model of something from this game- they will appreciate what you are doing, and that you are sharing your work. Even a difficult model is better than none at all.

And if someone is not a big enough fan of the game, or does not have the patience... *they don't have to make it.* Isn't it wonderful how they have that option?

So, Kaizo, thank you for your efforts. And anon, your opinion has been expressed. I think he gets it. So will you lay the fuck off already?
>> Kaizo
>>156786
Takes some configuration. Mostly depends on where you've got the viewer pointed. It needs to know the location of the FFXI folder. Most expansions require you point it at a different ROM folder, and the furniture in the latest list requires you go with the "OriginalDatFiles" folder included with the viewer.

The folder it's looking for .dat files in can be configured under File (in the top left).
>> Anonymous
>>156786>>156877
You also have to play the PC version. You need the game installed in order for it to read the DAT Files. If you're on PS2/Xbox you're screwed.
>> Wanijobo
>>156889
Oh.
So I need to own the game.
Shit.

Also, an attempt at a papercraft template always generates more attention online. It helps test the waters to see if people are really interested in the model or any other related content. If the model has flaws that the original creator never resolved, then this information usually spreads along with the templates, and are either never seriously attempted or another creator tries to upstage the first template for the model by building a better, buildable model. If the model has an audience, then ANY kind of template will eventually lead to something more usable.

It isn't like the amount of papercrafters in the world or on 4chan is great enough for us to pick and choose which creators or creations we want to allow to be posted. Most of the anons I've come across in /po/ just like it when someone else shows enthusiasm for the hobby.

Is it to late to request the AF Hexagun, Kaizo?
>> Kaizo
Why won't this thread just die already ._.

>>157093
I'm only going to say this one more time. If you have a request, do so on the blog. There is a post titled 'Now Taking Requests.' Put your request in the comments of that post.

From this point forward, I'm not going to check this thread anymore.
To those of you who supported my actions: thank you.
To those of you who contested them: please die in a fire.
To those of you who think you can do better: by all means. I'm not trying to author something amazing. I'm just trying to get papercraft models of something I really enjoy out there. If you can make them better/easier/what-have-you, then I'd love to see them, and I will link to your creations at any given opportunity.

Good day, /po/.
