All this /tg/ material must be getting to my brain.

Getting there little by little...
>> chamoo232
>>42778
you will get some bad surprise once in pepakura. all the round surfaces will end up hundreds of little rectangles with tiny tiny tiny tabs on each ends
>> Anonymous
I am looking forward to this one.
>> Anonymous
>>42781
That's when you let Pepakura use "auto-development" on that part, and it has problems with "round" shapes, yes. But it's quite easy to join the edges together, 5 minutes work. Then delete all the lines that show it's made up out of thin rectangles, and you can get a perfect cylinder.

>>42781
>>42786
Thanks for the tips, guys ! I'll make sure to look into that.

That's where I stop for tonight.

>>42781
Well, I did get the bad surprise ! I'll make sure to either take care of this at foldout, or just remove the curved relief from the model and texture them instead.

Also, I was considering making the model in such a way that it can be "lifesize"-ish. Any suggestions on how to prepare it, unfold it, etc ?
>> M.
Still working on it ! Spent most of tonight cleaning the whole design, getting rid of unnecessary lines and faces, etc. More tomorrow.
>> Anonymous
>>42999
excelllent. my space marine larp grows near.
>> M.
And the cleaning continues. Many useless lines are gone, construction's been revised following Chamoo and one of the Anon's advice, and as you can see I started splitting the gun in different parts to allow for life-size making later.

Also in the credits : Alexander, the factotum for the school where I work. He's a hunter and very guns-savvy, and helped with the dimensions a bolter should have "in real life".

Oh, and picture.
>> Rosethornn
Why change it for irl, though?

I mean, it's meant to be, basically, a hand-held semi-automatic mini-RPG launcher, for use by superhuman cyborgs.

It's not *meant* to be realistic. ^^;

>>43135
So we can play with it. ;)
"M."... The Masamune guy that discovered this and other 4Chan boards a while ago and was never gonna share his work again..?
>> Rosethornn
>>43135

edit: before I get ripped into by an army of nerds, I know their shells aren't rocket propelled. I was just trying to find comparison, and highlight the fact that they're not normal machine guns.

I just think that a bolter is meant to look mean, chunky and full of dystopian sci-fi meanness. Rather than in the proportions of modern weaponry.

The guy is talking about dimensions, not proportions, there's a BIG difference that is also very HUGE.

You're talking about proportions: chunky, bulky, whatever; shapewise it looks sci-fi. The guy didn't change these proportions that "make" this gun.

The guy was talking about dimensions: in the game, it's scaled to the character's size. A real person can't hold it that way, it needs to be scaled up to a 1:1 scale. All he did was use real guns as reference to work out how big the grip should be, so you can clench your fist around it.

Looks great, but I'm missing a "trigger" part, or rather a "bridge" between the grip and the magazine. Shoule be easy to make (but it does need a little thickness, not just two strips of paper glued back to back...)
>> M.
>>43141
Don't worry, the trigger's coming up next ;) I had to keep that for later though, because of some trouble I had with the other parts (that's the first time I use the software approach to making a model : I'm usually more the ruler-and-pencil kind of guy)

And indeed, I'm not changing the proportions : they are what gives the bolters such a mean look. Dimensions we can afford to be "realistic". After all, you still have to carry the gun around on the battlefield before going to dine in...Well, you know where we dine tonight.

So that's where we are now. From my point of view this little guy is ready for texturing and unfolding - just going to break it into several "blocks" - handle, charger, head, main body, aim, and what's on top of the handle - so it can be taken all the way up to full size without crapping all over Pepakura Designer.

Before that though...Any requests or suggestions, changes in shapes to make it more true to its badass origins ?

Same thing regarding the Pepakura unfolding part. Anybody got suggestions for that ?

>>43136
No, I'm not that person. I don't even know who you're talking about !

Oh, nice ! That might be useful for future reference.

If I can make something out of the bolter project, I was thinking of making one of these guns+chainsaws.
>> M.
Quick update before my connection dies again. I'm done with the model design, and am now taking it to Pepakura Designer to see if it "works" before texturing it. Cheers.

So who's up for some test building ? No instructions yet, no textures, just plain ol' testing.

Looks nice so far! It's a shame there are so many "bad edges" (the red lines) and I have no idea how to get rid of them =(

Also, can you add this reload lever above the trigger? I think a simple block is enough, the rail or whatever you call it can be done by texture.
>> M.
>>43519
I'll give the trigger thing a go. And I'll try to take care of the bad edges !
>> M.
>>43589
I just realized two things.
1) This one is so big card might be the only option to build it, lest it collapses under its own weight.

2) I might add an "inner structure" to support the outside, depending on how the testbuild goes regarding weight support.

"Bad edges" are edges that aren't connected properly. Needs to be fixed in the 3D model. There's either a small gap between them, but I think in your case, it's a different problem. Computers are stupid, and need help in determining where exactly each point is in a 3D model.
>> Anonymous
>>43620
Thanks for taking the time to explain ! I'll see what I can do about it in the 3D model, thus. After I get a new ream of cardstock, that is.

Another something, but this is a personal "esthetic" view:
The trigger part you added is the same width as the grip. So now the trigger part and the grip melt/blend together into one contineous plane. And (this is the personal part) I think it's ruining the design. You did a great job I think, the gun looks great, nice and chunky, but this looks like a cheap fix. I think it would look better if it was a little bit less wide than the grip, even though it may not be exactly as the original design (I don't know that, not a WH fan ;).
Anyway: nice job, keep it up, /po/ loves people that make their own papercrafts!

>>43642
hmmm although firearms with "integrated" trigger guard still have some kind of "cliff" there (I know the words I choose are not the best but I'm sure you understand me), I think a plane version of the bolter would look the best... and it would be easier to make =)

>>43603
Depends on the size, doesn't it?
>> Rosethornn
>>43150

fair enough, I get mixed up easily I guess. :P Sorry for any unneccasary ranting.

The model looks great, I can't wait to see the finished piece. :3
>> Anonymous
this looks fantastic, I can't wait aswell for the final model
>> Anonymous
>>43651
MAYBE only a teeny tiny tats slightly more difficult, but really, the difficulty doesn't change at all, depending on how you design the papercraft. In fact, if designed properly, it will be easier to build!
And I explained why I think it would look better, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
If it's just because you think it'll cause M. more work so you'll get your hands on the papercraft a little later: it's better to wait some more and get a better papercraft, than to get a papercraft now and forever be thinking: "Nice. But could have been better." ;)
>> Anonymous
Instead of having to work on the small trigger parts while it's attached to the rest of the gun, maybe causing you to be unable to reach it properly; the trigger part can be a seperate part, which you can build easily and just glue to the bottom of the gun when you finish it. That was what I meant, btw.
>> M.
Everyone, thanks for your feedback and advice ! I'll try and see what I can do about the trigger, making it a little less wide shouldn't be difficult. I can't tell whether that's the "original" design or not, as I no longer have 40k models and the references I found wouldn't help telling if there is a "cliff" or not. Although it would make sense, since it would allow someone to "tell" whether they're touching the trigger or not, even eyes closed/vision damaged - which is just the kind of mindset you want for a weapon, right ?
