Is there anyway to stick a 3ds max file into some program that will unfold and format into a papercraft template? I need to transform the 3ds model to the left into a papercraft. Tips are appreciated

Yeah, Pepakura Designer is what everyone uses.

Cool, but what's the quickest way to edit something down to minimum polys? Cause this is coming up around 2,100 pieces

actually, I was wondering if there was an option to simplify the model in pepakura or if I have to delete them all by hand.

There are several, but I think the best is Metasequoia. Once you have the 3d model loaded, choose "Wire" on the left, and pick the last choice in the box to reduce polygons manually.

It works this way. If you have a square made up of polygons with a diagnal line through it, you can get rid of that diagnal line using the Wire feature. You can also add more polygons if necessary.

And if you want a GOOD papercraft, do it manually. Use your head, think logically, and work out in 3D->2D->3D what changes need to be made to make the digital 3D model into a good 2D template that builds into a 3D papercraft.
A computer can't do that.

Papercraft is a hobby for the patient ones, not only building papercrafts, but even more designing them. Everybody always asks about Pepakura, but if you make a model with Pepakura, you need to be aware that you'll probably only been working with Pepakura about 30 minutes (well, I'm exaggerating a little...) but the work on the 3D model will take you days if not weeks, depending on the model of course.
If you try to shortcut the preparation of the 3D model, the final papercraft will not be very good usually...

I use Mootools 3D photo browser & polygon cruncher to proccess most of my models. Then I use Metesq to edit & clean the models before moving on to Pepakura...
