Keep a pad for glue nearby. Only use a little bit at a time (a couple drop's worth). I strongly recommend using a stack of post-tits for this. When you've used up the space on it with the remains of glue, just tear off the top. Also, use something for a applying glue instead of your fingers. I use a colored pencil. And use wood glue. Pick up some Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Glue, it kicks a lot of ass.
