Since I've lost my free hi-res ink jet color printer for the summer, I've decided to pick up an old little thing I used to do when I was younger.

Has anyone ever completed the big 1,000? I've got about 6.

samefag.
They're asking if anyone has done the 1000 lucky star challenge.

Usually if you don't want to cut out the strips of paper to make the stars, you buy the paper. I had purchased the set (>>156810)
And i went really fast at the start. It is very hard to keep at it. I kinda do it on and off. But it's hard to do if you don't have fingernails. So when i cut them, i just pre-fold all the stars, and when they grow again, I can start pushing them again.
>> P.Papercraft

I don't have fingernails, so it hurts a little when I pinch. I've been cutting my own strips, but I'll look for my packs of strips soon

well a lot of the strip is hidden because the fold overlaps so many times, and since the initial not that must be tied isn't exact to begin with, the pattern could be slightly skewed from its intended position.

Seen such paper strips in a shop but never though to buy them. Buy them in the uk, no chance. Origami paper is expensive as it is.
I used to make them out of pages of magazines and general odd papers. They end up in various sizes.
>> Anonymous
>>158859
You can get both from the links already posted. One is a very cute coloured template to print, the other one is a blank page with lines on it (you have to draw on there by yourself)... You can find this one on the tutorial page on Step 2 I think. Haven't found any others with Google... Just a bunch of eBay sellers with more than 100 Patterns to choose from.

Well, usually strips with a lenght of 25cm and a width of 1cm are fine.. Sorry, can't give you US measures. Depending on how thin the paper is, you need to make the strips longer... But on "normal" Paper, 25cm should be fine.

PROTIP: Use a needle/straight pin to coax the pentagon into a "puffy" star if it tends to stay flat. Insert the needle through a corner of the pentagon.

PROTIP2: A trip down to your local chinatown/little tokyo/japantown should yield a number of stores that carry these pre cut, patterned paper strips designed for star making.

Personally I can never find the time/motivation/money to fold more than a pack of star strips at a time...

>> AgeSage !!/ezbQYNEPfC
>>158928
Well.. The "plushness" of the stars corners come from how sharp you fold ur little pentagon. Also, when pinching the star, use the soft tip of your finger to shape the corner of the star. In other words, use ur fingernail to start the pinch, and ur finger to shape the pinch. [:

If you want to cut paper smoothly and effortlessly, I would invest in a paper cutter. It can be either a small safety cutter like the one pictured, or a heavier guillotine-style paper cutter, but it will get the job done. (Expect to invest like 20 bucks)

Orr... just do what I do (which requires a firm touch and a steady hand). A straight edge and a razor blade. But mind the type of straight edge you use, as a razor blade will cut into most anything that isn't metal.

Also, neat pattern! Your print compelled me to make more of these goddamn stars, and who knows... i might hit the 1000.. someday...

I created some lucky stars designs over the weekend. Well here is one of them I'm planning to put the rest in pdf and they need a little editing. In taking Wraith's advice I left about 50% of image blank. You get a much sturdier star if the strips are cut length ways rather than sidesways and from just 2 sheets of A4 I created around 34 stars.
Lost track how many are made I'm over the 100 mark.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
Here's a pdf with just vertical bars. Print it on the back of your design if you have a hard time cutting in a straight line.

(Yes, the bars don't run to the bottom of the page. I spent over 9000 hours in MSWord and couldnt get the margin to drop. However you don't get to bitch about it because it will NEVAR show on your stars.)
>> Anonymous

ive always done /po/ while watching epidose upon episode of whatever show it is ive got on dvd or downloaded (west wing atm), but making stars is better for that because it means i dont have to look down from the screen too much.

moar like this! works great with my laser printer and colored paper.except when i push it with miy fingernail. the stuff rubs off.
>> Anonymous
To do this, do you just use normal paper, like printer paper? Or is there a type of special paper for it...

I have no printer. Where can I buy precut paper?

I use printer paper. I find it's perfect for about 1cm wide strips along the long side of the paper. I find it gets too short (thin stars that dont fold well) along the short side.

also if you want to cut strips exactly along the pattern, here are the print lines for the back of your paper that should match up to the pattern

I bought some coloured paper today ($2.50 for 30 sheets 6 different colours) it's about 80gsm.
I find it's really easy to work with and it doesn't jam my guillotine at all. I'm just a beginner but I'd reccomend using this kind of paper.

Forgive my inexperience, but I have a question about ebay. I found a guy who is selling all sorts of folding paper for cheap, but I worry that if I buy five different packages individually, I'll get charged shipping for each individual pack. How do I combine shipping on ebay?

I used to be addicted to making these stars! I would make them non-stop and amassed about a hundred or so a week for almost two years. Though recently I've taken to making little cranes and I've got about 400 of those so far.

>>160673
Oh, and, I think my little yellow crane wins. I couldn't get a picture of it standing up, it would fall down if I breathed or moved. [and the pink one's retarded because it got stepped on. D:]
>> Anonymous
That's about as small as I can go on those as well; someone posted a picture of one made out of either rice paper or tobacco rolling paper that was about 2/3 the size of it, so we have a bit more to go.
>> Anonymous
>>161290
what kind of paper did you use for each of those?
>> Anonymous
>>161304
The red one is made out of a thicker red paper. It was thick like cardboard, but unlike cardboard it was smooth. The pink and white were just regular computer paper. The yellow one was a thin but not quite tissue paper that I found in my school's art room. I'm sorry, I don't know paper types and can't be more specific.

I'm not big on the terminology either, but thanks for letting me know. I'm finally finishing the 1000 that i started in my senior year, but I'm just using white and salmon printing paper.

how to make this cranes and stars, does anyone have documents to post, im dead bored and want to try it out! cheers

Here's my total of 700 exactly.

I've been generally using pre-cut strips, but I started with computer paper and then got bored and cut up a magazine. I colored some of the pre cut ones black with sharpie so they would help the neon ones contrast a bit more.

actually not a modget. It was my post, I didn't see it was a get until you pointed it out.

my stars get flat and really ugly when i pinch them, is that newbie-fail? tips?

>>161361

Don't worry. This happens. You're either crushing the paper too much when you are folding it, or you are pinching it on an uneven angle.

This is how I pinch it. Make sure you feel like it won't slip from under you.

Circle glass jar was about 300 of the 1500 ones i made a few years back, the taller half-filled jar is my current project now that you faggots got me started again. The stack of papers underneath it was from an origami calendar with lots of different textures.

... The calendar papers make for some bright and happy stars, no dull colors :D

I made around 300+/1000 but I "un-stared" them because I wanted to write notes inside them too ~.~
>> Anonymous
>>161361
you could also try taking longer (but not wider) strips of paper. If you fold a thicker pentagon, it will be a firmer star when you pinch it.
>> Anonymous
Wow. I just read this thread and I've been inspired. I ordered some precut strips off ebay and I hate that I have to be at work now cause I would spend all day making them. I'll let you know how I make out. Good stuff /po/

cheers for tips, yous are of win! I made a good few but think i might order some precut strips now...

topic bump ^^ I made a few yesterday
>> P.Papercraft
Class starts tomorrow and I'll have little to no time to make moar. I plan to finish them by the week, however. I'm almost passed 800.

I'm glad a lot of people are making the stars now. It's like a STD

It there a quick way to cut them in strips w/o a ruler, paper cutter, or printer (to print the lines)

Excuse my typo/poor grammar. I would really like to know because tearing pieces of paper into half and half and half again is getting pretty time consuming.

empty (or full) pizza box for a ruler, pen, scissors.
alternatively (but since you dont have a ruler, dont have a razor (SHAVE) and a printer, you probably won't have this) a paper shredder thing. That type that you destroy top secret docs with.

You are brilliant, Anon. I never would've thought of this. No I don't have a ruler or a printer (just moved house), but I can get my hands on a paper shredder, at least long enough to keep me busy for a while.
