Old School tmots
So, I've decided to do it. I'm making the first level of Mario in a semi 3D papercraft for hanging on the wall. The idea is the ground will stick out so that the blocks are actually there, the background will rest against the wall, anything mario could jump on or hit with his head will be there in (cubic) 3D. I'll probably do enemies(and mario), either as paper-thin two sided cutouts, or as a semi 3D version that'd be super hard at the size.

Which brings me to the size problem. Epic proportions:

32 DPI = 2x2 "blocks" per inch. = 1 pixel per 1/32 in. (~0.8 mm) = 106 inches long = nearly 9 feet long, 7.25 inches tall = at least 10 pages for just the background

I've just begun it, it'll probably be done in the next couple weeks though. I'm looking for advice, I suppose, and want to ask, are you guys willing to do .8mm folds, or should I simplify edges, like on blocks that have a pixel missing in the corners?
>> Anonymous
I don't think you really need to work in such a detail. Even if you make your template with 0.8 mm folds, it all depends on wether the person who builds it places his scoring tool, ON the fold line, on the INSIDE, or on the OUTSIDE of the fold line... And after folding, when using cardstock, the scored and folded edge actually has a thickness, taking away from the precision even more. So simplifying it would be a very good idea. You won't see the difference. ;)
>> tmots
I had assumed as much, and already starting making everything no bigger than 1/2 inch cubes. The only difficult part would be mario and enemies, who (after somethought) would be best as just two sided cutouts. Making then any other way would take a magnifying glass and at least an hour. Mario alone would have... something like 50 .8 mm folds. and that's just by increasing the thickness by adding a half inch. I'm already done with most of the blocks that you hit with your head, I just need to figure out how many of each you need. The long chains of the same type of block will all be one piece to save on paper and time. I have plans for just about everything else but the tubes and the flagpole. The tube I'm probably just going to make as 1x1 inch cubes, so they'll be rectangles. Main reason is that adding curves has a good chance of making it look retarded, and making it not look as authentic from a front view.

Here's a start. Not sure if this will be a final, but here's all the blocks needed for the whole level, on one A4. Kinda cramped, trying to save on pages. Some of the tabs looks shity, and are kinda cramped, chances are I'll do it again on two pages later.

I imported the png file with the blocks into photoshop and split it into two pages that fit on US letter paper. I scaled them to 50% in photoshop, because they imported as being pretty large. I also messed with the tabs a bit. Here's the first page. Both pages are 16 color png files.

this is basically the idea, but the clouds and bushes will also stick out, and the tubes will be more cubic, just because it feels more authentic, and is easier to make. Only difference is I'll be adding bottoms and everything to blocks, so no matter where you put it on the wall, even if you look at it from the bottom, there's no white showing. That brings up a question, should the floor be 1 or 2 blocks wide? (z axis)
>> tmots
>>42395
also, how are the 2D sprites propped up?
>> tmots
>>42382
wait, I thought A4 was average printer paper, what's the right size then? This changes my spacing on the background and floor blocks completely.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
A4 is regular printer paper, only US (and not even all people in US, official/international stuff is printed on A4 there as well) uses "letter size".
A4 210.0 mm x 297.0 mm (8.26 inch x 11.69 inch)
Letter 8.50 inch x 11.00 inch (215.9 mm x 279.4 mm)
So either you make it A4 so the rest of the world can easily print it, or you make it so US can easily print it. Either way, either the rest of the world has to adjust a little when printing, or US.

Also, I think papercraft is mainly a european and asian thing, so A4 makes much more sense

wait, should I go A4 or letter? I can hold off on the bg for a day or so, which is preferred, and does it really matter? I mean, won't it just leave a little extra white on the edges and size it a little smaller?

I live in the USA, and I'm willing to try to convert everything you do from the A4 size to the US letter size. I'd say from the people on this board that you'd probably be best to make everything A4 size, and just allow the rest of us to try and convert it to US letter, or go buy some A4 paper that's thick enough for paper craft.

Also, the first page I posted of the US letter version gets cut off. It's just a little bit too wide. I'm going to start editing the two pages now to see how I can fit everything.

I say invest in the tile to make cylindrical tubes. It could be blockish like in>>42395or simple tubes and tops like in my masterpiece. Just adjust the shade texture to fit.
>> tmots
     File :-(, x)
here's a complex piece, first A4, then instructions, then letter size, then letter inst.
I made it one piece and better fitting (but difficult-ish) rather than making it confusing or choppy.

The x3 means I increased the size by 3 times to make it bigger than just a couple hundred pixels either way. I mean, it's going to be pixels either way, but better to shrink than have to expand, I always say. Anyways, most printers can fit it to the page, right?

Yeah, I should on big stuff like the block-steps, but I left it two sided on the actual blocks because they make decent stand alone paper crafts. I could make another copy of them with a white side too though. I'll probably leave an edge of the normal block, just incase people fold too far, etc.
>> tmots
I have to get to bed, I'll check the thread when I wake up and really quickly white out blocks, and then start development on the tube. I'm putting off editing the bg so that the tubes and blocks won't show, but I have to leave a hint of where the blocks should go as a guide, and I have to edit the bushes if I do decide to make them semi 3D, etc. Also, I have to cut the blocks so that they fit ona page, but they won't line up with the bg. I'm not sure if I'm going to yet, but I WANT to make 3 versions of the center 2 pages (BG and floor bricks), one flat, on with a 90 degree fold outwards, and one with a 90 degree fold inwards, so the massive 9'(ish) paper craft can go in or around a corner and still look natural.

I know it's supposed to be curved, but it's weird to make it look more curved. The most I'd want to do would be make it an octagonal prism. Making it too detailed is like putting Gamecube garphics in a 16 bit world. Anyways, I need some body to test something for me, my printer just ran out of ink, and I don't have the cash for more right now. So... here, a little demo piece.

Update: I'm more than half done, I finished editing the floor and BG, just need to divide it into A4 and letter pages, design the tube and do some more minor details (clouds, bushes, SUPER MARIO sign). It'll be done within the next 48 hours, unless something comes up.
>> Not Anonymous !!JC5tlzc53lP
If I can figure out where to put it, and you post templates, I'm so gonna do this. Hell, even if you don't post templates, if I can find a place for it, I'll create my own.

Another SMB level I'd like to do this with? 7-1 from SMB3. That level was epic and would be awesome to make.
>> tmots
>>42731
Don't worry, I'll be posting templates. And yeah, the main reason I want it to be able to go around a corner is it's hard to find ~9' of free space, even on a wall. At least, around my place it is.
>> Not Anonymous !!JC5tlzc53lP
>>42734
I -may- have a wall it would work on-- I just need to A) figure out how I'm going to hang it on the wall, and B) wash the wall.
>> tmots
I still can't decide on how to do the bushed and clouds, so that they are raised off the background. Should I use a little rectangle, or what? After this, there's not much to do. I've seperated the floor into letter sized pages, I have to seperate the BG still, do the steps a bit more, and then it's done.
>> Not Anonymous !!JC5tlzc53lP
>>42850
I kinda liked how>>42726and>>42727had the clouds/bushes- just make them cutouts like you did with the sprites, only move them to the middle of the back block instead of between the two.
>> tmots
>>42851
But if I do that with the clouds, the edges could wind up being a little overly complex. I mean, I could simplify it, probably, I'll have to see what I can do.
I probably make a smaller, roughly could shaped thing behind it in white, and have that be the backing to the cloud. I'll have to see.
>> Not Anonymous !!JC5tlzc53lP
>>42852
I dunno, if you just made the clouds 2D and stuck them out with a small tab or something I still think it would look good- that's what it looks like the other guy did and I liked that look for it.
>> Anonymous
>>42852

I think it might be possible to get them to stick out just a little bit like that without too much trouble. You could either make tabs that are thin and long and have two places to fold them at, or you could simply say to use a piece or two of tape that's formed in a circle so it sticks to itself and everything else. The tape usually makes the paper jut out a little bit naturally.

I've also wanted to say this for awhile. I think the pipes are just fine as rectangles. They don't need to be round. If they had a more complicated shape than a rectangle, then they would look too complicated in comparison to the 2D Mario and enemies. It would basically be as bad as the idea of bringing 64 bit graphics into an 8 bit game.

Now that I'm done with my final build of Link, I'll have to start doing test builds for you until I leave to see my boyfriend.
>> tmots
>>42681
>>42682
Has anybody tested this yet? I'm not positive it'll work, and I want to know if I can use it for a final. I mean, it should work, if the paper were infinitely thin, but that's not the case.

I half agree. Honestly, my first thought was Octogonal pipes, though... with square insides :)
>> tmots
>>42972
>>42862
I'm not sure about the tubes, but I have a rectangle one finished already. I didn't make it hollow, but I can without too much trouble. I suppose willing to do octagon tubes, but it'll take a little longer, and the pixels on it won't all be perfect, like with these. Some part of it will have to be diagonal, so I can't just copy and paste the pattern. I've done everything so far in photoshop because it's cubes.

To be honest, I like the pipe in>>42395more than in>>42727

OP, /r/ a rapidshare of all the things you used to make this when you finish.

Also, how would one go about making the background? Do you just tape a bunch of cardstick together, or use a big paper?
>> Anonymous
Are you going to do the coin filled "basement" beneath level 1-1?

That would be epic.

>>43277

I think so too. But I think that's better suited for a second papercraft, mainly because of how large the first one is going to be. Plus, quite a few of the things needed to make that part of the level will have a template or something that can be turned into one from the things created for the overworld.

Tmots, I did the two parts that make the castle and took a few pictures. Now you can tweak the design based on the outcome.

last pic. There's not much wrong with it. I kept the front of the castle separate from the background so it would be easier to see where all the parts ended up going from the template.

Though it might be confusing to someone putting this together, I think it might help to just make the stone ridges on top of the castle in the following manner. The side that faces front should go ahead and be divided. The ones in the back should just be one continuous line. That way, when someone glues them together and cuts them out, the back will automatically be the same color as the castle.

I think you should keep the rectangular tubes for now. I also think it would be fun to make them hollow so they can hold pennies and such. Who needs the underworld when you can see all the junk down there from the top?

Sorry guys, shits come up over the past few days, But I'm continueing work on this tonight, hoepfully it'll be done tomorrow afternoon.

I actually intended that the floor and walls be folded the other way, so that the black would be facing away from the background, and the white sides of the flaps on the bottom of wall would be on the white part of the floor, and the white on the wall would be against the bg, but you showed me what I needed to see, that it all folds alright without the edges looking weird. I figured it'd work, I just wanted to test it first. Thanks. <3
