Anyone use the Pepakura software? Is it any good?

It all depends on the 3D model you use it on.
If the 3D model sucks, the papercraft you make from it with Pepakura will suck too.
If the 3D model looks great and is low-poly enough, you can do wonderful things with Pepakura.

Pepakura makes all wonderful things possible. It has some "buggy-ness" to it but over all it is the best, papercraft creation program. The 3d model is key as stated above, you need to build a lot of papercraft projects to see what is good and bad about the design and then incorporate that into your model as you make it. I have made hundreds of models using Pepakura (and get paid for most of them).

I have Metasequoia, and have been doing some experimenting with 3D modeling. (It was recommended on the Pepakura Designer website.) Does anybody have any tips?

I am the one who posted earler and get paid to make papercraft models. This is my suggetions to all who want to try to make a living at something like this.
I would begin by diving as deep into a 3d program as you possibly can. Learn the basics needed to create papercraft. I have professional training (ie, a degree) in graphic and commercial art and 3d animation. But to make papercraft you do not need a degree. You need to understand basic polygonal modeling, and if you would like to be able to move your characters into different poses you will also need to learn some rigging, and animation. But realistically all you need to know is basic polygonal modeling. Use your experience from building papercraft models in your desiging of the models and the work in pepakura will be significantly easier.
Lastly a few notes:
1) I do not make my living on papercraft creation alone. I am an art director for a company and own my own graphics firm that i work on the side.
2)Do what you love, and the money will follow.
3)Art is awesome, so is papercraft

This is something I'm trying to do, since I'm already working with 3D programs and texturing all day in my full time job, but somehow I seem to be enjoying making papercraft more lol.

I got my start doing papercraft believe it or not by doing it in a coffee shop, I love coffe and spend way too much time in coffee shops so i often bring my work with me. I was making some legend of zelda papercraft when a woman approached me and asked me what i was doing. So we talked i told her what i was doing and what i do for a living, and she was interested in me making some papercraft for her business. From there i have gotten numerious jobs mainly word of mouth. You may want to try by designing papercraft models, create a web page to show this, make sure you show your creation process (ie. concept sketches and finished models) its up to you if you want to post the patterns for download, (probally wouldn't hurt) and make sure there is contact info on there for you and put that you are willing to take design jobs on. That is about the best i can tell you on how to try to get a start.

unfortunately almost all of my papercraft pieces are commisioned works that due to agreements i cannot pass out, however i do have a few that i could pass out.

it is a great program, and 20 isn't bad for something like that, it is worth it if you use it, ask yourself these questions.
1)do i want to make papercraft?
2)am i profecient enough in hacking to rip models, or profecient enough in a 3d program to either rebuild or generate from scratch a 3d model?
3)Will i create my own papercraft?
If you answered no to any (especially #2) don't buy it

Well, there's Keygens around, to just unlock the program.
I'm not sure what else you would get with the license (sample material, like the dragon).
If you want to do professional work with it (in: you get money for it...), i would buy the license.
But then again, hacking models wouldnt be considered legal in that case either...
