Most of us don't know about 3DS Max either; we use much simpler programs like SketchUp, Blender, or Metasequoia.
3DS Max is a professional tool that you can't expect anybody to explain here in a threadpost on a papercraft and origami imageboard...
Your best bet still are forums, tutorials and communities and the help files of course, and starting of with something easy, and just trying out what all all the buttons do.

The tutorials and reference files that come with it are surprisingly good. You might start there. UVing is seriously *weird* to wrap you're head around, but 3dbuzz.com has some good video tutorials explaining texturing.

Pfeh, if you really wanna go deep, Blender will have you begging for mercy, and I'm not even talking about Papercraft modeling here. Blender = Dutch = Best free 3D program.
It's the closest thing to 3DSmax and Maya.

I really can't imagine trying to learn 3ds Max from someone online, or crappy tutorials... I find it much easier to learn by watching people work as they build their models, etc (and if they explain things as they do it... I'm a visual learner I guess)

Local classes or something? College classes?

Tutorial videos?

I work with 3DS Max. I first went through 2 years in university doing a certificate in 3D, about 80% of the classes where on 3DS Max (modeling, animation, rigging, textures,...). Then I did a 1 year intesive class in a colledge speciallised in training people to work in the gaming insustry (everything was on 3DS Max). After all that, I truely believed I knew 3DS Max like the back of my hand. But when I starded working at Ubisoft, it took me 1 week to realise I still didn't know a thing about 3DS Max :P. Well, compared to the other guys who work there I mean.

Well, Blender's fairly easy to learn if you're just gonna do papercrafting, but it's got a TON of advanced stuff too...

Plus, you gotta go with it, since it's (legally) free. No "Pro Version" or anything. :p

if you wanna learn 3ds max try lynda.com tutorials.

otherwise, ask some specific questions. Also there are big chances that your local library or barnes and noble will have some 3dsmax books you can buy.

A few years back, I actually took a week-long summer class at iD Tech Camp in 3D Character Modeling; 3D studio max was the program we had to use. Don't remember jack shit about it though... But I did make this cool-looking psychotic robot snowman!

That's pretty charitable.

Well, it doesn't seem like you have lot of options right now, does it? Universities usually charge a hell of a lot for classes, if they let people take single classes at all. I got to take a 3D animation class in high school with 3DS max, and all we did was do the damn tutorials. Even if you do manage to take a class, you might just end up doing the same as me, just doing the tutorials. That said, they really aren't bad- they walk you through something, and then tell you what the fuck you did. So suck it up- if you really wanna use it, you're just going to have do whatever you can manage, and right now it looks like you're stuck with tutorials and the teacher-dude. Have fun.

eh, I had a copy on my machine before my HD crash, and the way I learned it was primarily through the turorials. Do a few of them to get the hang of it and then experement with the rest. Never realy got good, but I had fun. My suggestion is don't panic and just experement with it. Make some scenes, do some animations, and when you need a specific effect, go through the tutorials to see if you can find one that applies. Also, good luck!
