New Daft Punk Helmets Soon 20xx
Working on making my Daft Punk helmets more accurate, and already have Guy-Man's helmet more or less completed. Just compare to the OP image from the original thread to see the differences.

-----Re-proportioned body, increased rear bar angle, addition of bottom angle, widened main ear panels, enlarged/extended ears (the unnecessary and shape warping backing has been removed as well), more accurate wire panel attachment points and, last but not least, simplified LEDs and rods that can actually be folded by human hands!-----

All I need from /po/ is a way assign textures to the pdo file. The texture options tell me the uv settings or some such shit aren't set and that textures cannot be applied. I'm a modeler, not a Pepakura user, and I need some help.

Once I'm done with Guy-Man then I'll finish reworking Thomas and his pep file. After completion, expect Discovery versions (light-up helmets) to follow soon after with altered modeling and all new texture maps. I've been thinking of different rudimentary lighting systems so that even the newest newfag in /po/ could light them up, but nothing's finalized so don't cry if that doesn't happen.

I need your help, /po/!

Seeing as how the original thread no longer exists, I should probably post the before pic.

hey whats up 20XX, I am the one who edited your optimus prime helmet. I think you should be able to export the textures from your 3d modeling program then apply them in pepakura. If you want you can shoot me over a copy and I can see if I can help you out any. Let me know
>> Anonymous
the model looks fuckin sick by the way, makes the other one look like EXTREME FAIL!
>> Anonymous
just reread your first post and see that your having problems with uv coordinates, I have a couple of 3d models like that myself, I guess know would be a good time for me to do some research how to fix this. Be back later
>> 20xx
>>136164

Wasn't aware I could import the textures, thought it was a separate process within Pep. I'll have to try that, thanks!

I fail for not even thinking of that.

after looking at them side by side the new one definitely is slicker. props to you man!

Nice the new one looks better! But is there a way that you can make it more rounded and not so much squarish! But anyways good job on this!

Many /po/eple apparantly think Pepakura Designer has something to do with 3D modeling. Maybe that's why they don't bother fixing the 3D model beforehand because they think they need to do that in Pepakura Designer and they end up making baaaad models that need fixing in the 3D model stage. ;)
So here it is: Pepakura Designer is not a 3D application. It just imports your 3D model as it is, exactly as you made it (with all the small mistakes that the 3D application you made it with hides for you). So including the textures as you applied them. Check to see if the texture images (textures are basically image files wrapped around the 3D model, making a polygon yellow does not mean you textured it; unless you put a yellow jpeg image over it of course) are in jpeg or bmp format or a format Pepakura recognizes.

It could be less squarish if you divide the curved parts into more segments. It depends on personal choice: do you want it very curved or do you want it easy to build with less cutting/less parts. It calls for a balance which can be different for each person, and unless you make it yourself, you're gonna have to live with the balance/choice made by the designer. ;)
When you build it, you can choose not to score the fold lines so you won't get sharp edges and fold, but rather curved edges, it can help a big deal to get a more curved feeling.
>> 20xx
>>136374

I textured the model for the render (there are even wires on the back of the head) but stripped it down before importing it into Pepakura because I was under the impression Pep could handle texturing.

Anyway, I've gotten requests for a smoother helmet on places other than here, so I'll probably do hi-res and lo-res versions of the helmets for those who want something more accurate or something easier.

I appreciate all your help on the previous versions, but if I want to continue producing paper models I'll have to be able to do them without outside assistance.

I'll be taking a break for a few days on these things simply because I'm getting burnt out. I have over 400 reference images of Daft Punk's helmets and there are still portions and details I have have nothing concrete on.

np, did you find where to scale it up? if not its under the 2d pattern window menu, all the way the the bottom. there is a scale up/down by 10% and a scale by specific incerments. it will ask for a hight in cm and it will scale the model to that hight. good luck!

Holy shit, creepy. I just popped in to update and it's at the top, waiting for me.

Things are going shitty. I more or less finished the hi-poly version, and now it won't fucking export properly. I can't even save it as a 3ds without it fucking up and removing huge sections. So, basically, I don't know what the fuck to do. I'm fucking stressed out and now this thing is giving me problems, and I feel like bitch slapping Daft Punk.

Anyone have any advice? I'm just getting pissed at my comp at this point.

Finally managed to get it to convert to 3ds properly, but can't get the textures to export. The zip contains the 3ds file and image maps for the colors and wiring on the back of Guy-Man's head.

A couple shots of the model and a few pointers...
>> 20xx

>> 20xx
     File :-(, x)
Because the rear bar now separates from the wire panel, there was a small gap where one could presumably see inside the helmet. I filled in that gap with a black piece, seen highlighted in green. It was hard to get a proper render, it'll make sense when you open up the model.
>> 20xx
     File :-(, x)
And the strange notch on the sides of the head? That's an alignment point for the ear during assembly. Simply match up the two points and make sure it sits at the fold. Much better than the guessing game on Version 1.

The LEDs/rods are still fair game, though, so if anyone opts to not bother folding them there won't be some marking point or crap.

Hey there OP, gotta ask what OS you're using, I love the layout in>>142131Sorry that it's not wholly on topic... Anyhow, I wonder if there would be a way to assemble this, make a mold from it for resin or something, and actually throw LEDs and stuff into it..
>> 20xx
>>143187

1. That's not the OP, I am

2. You'd basically need to do the Halo method on it: brush resin into the paper, fiberglass it, bondo/sand/primer it until the surface is proper, then mold and cast in your desired material (resin, fiberglass, etc.)

These helmets are the Human After All/Electroma versions, though, which don't have any lights, so if accuracy is a concern, LEDs wouldn't be used.

Additionally, Guy-Man's dome would have to be vacuumformed over a buck.

There are reason you can't find replica Daft Punk helmets to buy. They're fucking hard to make.
>> Anh1l1at1on
>>143213
actually there are exact replicas made by the same company that supplied them to daft punk

you just need $43,000 and daft punk's explicit permission.

if you can get both, hats off to you

>>143187
im slightly confused, is that sarcasm or did you select wrong post, cuz i dont think i have anything layed out in pic except showing where sides are flipped wrong (IE backside is where front is on surronding faces, vice versa)
