I have to make four spheres, about 14" in diameter. They will be masks, similar to those of "The Residents". I've looked at several ways to create them, including thin glass domes (like a fishbowl), which I would break with a hammer and pull the glass out of the mask's hole.

What suggestions would you give?

i would do a wireframe and paper mache
but maybe that's not the look u want

In kindergarten we made astronauts helmets with balloons and paper mache same as you glass bowls idea but a lot safer

or you could just use normal paper craft, here is a paper craft of the moon, just goto a place like kinkos or something and get it blown up to a bigger size.
Just remember for the desired size cerunfance is two times pi radius.

ive done this by covering a ball with saran wrap, then covering it with paper mache. When it dries, cut around along the middle. The saran wrap makes it easier to remove. Then tape it back together
