1. Paper: I use 65 lb. cardstock, but only cause I'm too lazy to go drive to Staples or something, and th local stationers and bookstore both only have 65 2. Dedicated self-healing cutting mats. Its what everybody uses. I have an Art Alternatives 5" by 7", but only because I carry my /po/ stuff around a lot (College student, I work in places like dorm room, lounge, library, class, etc) and need the portability. My size is big enough for a lot of applications, but sometimes hard to tell where it is under the paper, or long (see whole page length) lines. Try this: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Alvin-Self-Healing-Cutting-Mat-8-5-x11-Binder_W0QQitemZ160283148649QQcmdZVie wItem?hash=item160283148649&_trkparms=72:1163|39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Although your local store where you got your hobby knife should have cutting mats, probably near the knives. If you didn't get a hobby knife, scissors suck ass. Go get a hobby knife.
