I got that same e-mail, and it's full of crap. It was not a contest, nor did it have anything to do with Japan. Go to OP's link- it was all the work of this one guy. He does gallery shows of his work.

This type of papercraft is called Scherenschnitte. It's a german art, as the name might suggest, but most of it is not nearly this fancy. This is the more modern stuff, if you look at the more traditional forms of this art it is nice, but not nearly this cool.

nope, Scherenschnitt is strictly 2D and has its origins in China

what the fuck...this guy must have a shitload of patience to craft this shit... I'm speechless

you are very wrong about this. I've done an awful lot of it (I study art at the grad level) and it originates in Sweden/Germany (they don't know which) from somewhere in the 1400's to 1550's. It's called "Modern Scherenschnitte" as it's simply a very modern version of the original. Has nothing to do with China.

Just like modern styles ROOTED in old styles doesn't necessarily look like it, the roots are still in the original creations.

not trolling here, but lurk more, please.

now I am really curious, as an actual member of the "Deutscher Scherenschnittverein e. V." and an art student myself I never heard of a 3D vraiation of Scherenschnitte. Neither have my interested friends. For all I know its a 2D artform by definition and all historic research lead to China as the origin. I lurked a little and found nothing, that would match with your claims. As Peter Callesen is one of my favourite artist for a long time now I would be very intersted in any literature about this "modern Scherenschnitte" or any good links.

Not trolling either, just curious
