Polygonal death approaching jamis
So I haven't posted what I've been working on but now I might as well show ya what I'm up against.

Welcome to polygon hell...

Sweet Jesus! You are a God!
>> jamis
wow... so after seeing the Eve Unit 00 and Unit 01 in the "massive" thread I've decided texturing is a complete must for this papercraft. Therefore, I'll be working on that before I even try to cut up the parts.

Time to find reference photos...

@_@ this sucker is gonna eat up some hours

i cant wait

And leave the lines off the parts if possible, or make them faint lines so they are not obscene like the thick, black dotted lines so prevalent on many papercrafts.

will do! I'm still trying to figure out this whole template thing.

I don't get the whole "fold without lines" thing yet... but If anything I'll make two versions, with and without lines.

The texturing is going to be the hardest part. I wish I hadn't left my cloud wall scroll in maine...

you will post pics upon completion, ne?

Do you mean "I don't get WHY people want a version without lines?" (because it looks so much better, especially in papercrafts of characters; who would want black lines all over their faces, except maybe Special Ops ;o)

Or do you mean: "I don't get HOW to do it?" because that's easy as hell. In Pepakura, after you made the development, go to the Configuration Menu->Line Configuration and change all lines from Solid, Dot1 and Dot2 to "None". That's all. Mind you, if you made any white surfaces to be used at glueing surface, you'll need to draw the outline of those back, otherwise you won't see them on a white piece of paper when you print it. ;o)

also, be sure to include a version with lines like you were planning, so we can se where the fold lines are. ;o)

>>27063or make them faint lines

If only you could just check an option in the Configuration menu of Pepakura, or if you could just choose a different color... That's an option I'd like to see in a future Pepakura version. And it shouldn't be that hard for people that can write programs like Pepakura. ;o)

wow jamis, you are nuts. that would be some crazy unfolding/cutting/joining right there. But i'll be soon joining you as i work on the reno one after nekocon this weekend!

I love you. This will be crazy and epic.

It's not that bad.
I think>>27055is what you get when you just rip the model, open it in Pepakura, and just let Pepakura do the unfolding automatically.

NEVER let Pepakura do the unfolding, unless you're making a Borg Cube.
Most papermodels look like this at first, that's why you need a human being to edit the 3D model first, and then to tell Pepakura exactly where to cut and to fold.
A human person can determine how to break up the model in much simpler parts than Pepakura can: the key is that Pepakura tries to keep everything connected as much as possible, but that's not the best way to go. Usually, it's easier to just cut up the model in more seperate pieces: the number of parts might go up, but the difficulty level will go way down. And that's what we want.

I've already edited the model so it's buildable (except the head). What that screen shot is of is just the development that pepakura gives by default with no human intervention. I was just testing to see how big the sword was gonna be compared to the rest of the pieces. I don't really wanna split a huge polygon like that because it will make the final product kinda... blah...

I cut up the calves of the model earlier in the build process and there are four pieces for just one piece of the leg due to the "ruffles" in his pants. the rest of the model will be just as complex as that.

The pieces that is mostly on the page 3 pages down and 2 to the right is the torso alone, hastily cut up to see if there were too many polygons on it. I'll probably end up cutting that piece alone into at least two pieces before I'm done.

As I said in>>27059, I'm going for a big model on this one. The measurements I used to unfold that template would make the model about 2.5 feet long (tip of sword to back leg) and about 1.5 feet tall. These are rough estimates but it's close.

If people think it should be smaller, I may make a smaller version - but it'll be a lot harder to build then the big one.

Since it's so big, I want to keep as much detail as I can, i.e. not removing polygons...

can't wait to see the final product

I'd like it if you could make it 3 feet tall, so definitely no gripes from me to make it teency.

REPOAST!

man you are doing it wrong

your model is too complex because you are using triangles, you must use 4 point faces and redux them more

I do not see anything wrong with that.
