Are there any Myst papercrafts, specifically Myst island itself, and if not, is there interest in having Myst-related papercrafts?

OP here, I have no pepakura experience but some minor 3D modelling know-how. I can't promise a Myst island from scratch, but if I knew how to do it, I would. I imagine the whole thing wouldn't be very detailed, but still pretty big.

What do all the do-wants want?
>> Anonymous
>>104791

Specifically I would be up for the spaceship, one of the switchboxes, and random props. Really though, it wouldn't be that hard to make raw considering it was done in strata3d 14 years ago.
>> IHateBrownies
>>104791

I suggest working on a single building or area at a time, and release those as stand alones, and slowly build the whole island so you can put it together and be happy :DD

I want the library more than anything else.
trivia: it appeared also in a simpsons episode.

OP here (going as TFX), grabbed realMyst and ripped apart the .dni files. Unfortunately all I could find are a huge load of .vdb files, which I'm pretty sure are the 3D components, but I can't find any info about that particular format.

Anyone familiar with .vdb files or how to get 3D content out of them?

Can someone see if this opens in PD well and if it's an okay dificulty?

Needs simplification...
>> Anonymous
>>104922

Did you model that by hand or use a Myst source? Also, that layout is a tad too unrealistic to assemble, unfortunately.
>> Anonymous
>>104922
is texture included??
>> THI
*facepalm*

It was just the model (.obj) not a papercraft file (.pdo). I was asking to see if it would look okay flattened out. Like, no open edges or extra faces. From what I see in>>104926(thanks), I guess it would be alright if it was laid out properly.

Texture would be next.
>> Anonymous
>>104926
Doesn't need much if any. All papercrafts are likely to come out looking stupid when they're auto-unfolded at 10cm.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
     File :-(, x)
Changed to 35 cm; I did the unfold while defending myself from all the people who were flaming me.

Even at that larger size, you can see that some of the fine details end up extremely complex to put together; less changes are needed, but it'll still need some edits to go together and still look good.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
*messes with it*
Okay, if you're crazy enough to build it, I made it into a workable (somewhat) .pdo -- two sheets worth, and you can see how some parts are crazy complicated.

First, to clear things up, I wasn't flaming you, I was just saying.

Second, looks like you were one step ahead of me, though mine is a bit better. I put it up at 16cm and though it takes a lot more pages, it's definitely 100% buildable.

http://rapidshare.com/files/72766544/myst_rocket_test_1_.rar.html
>> TFX
>>105186

Did you hand model the .obj?
I'm having no luck whatsoever getting meshes or any sort of content out of realMYST, so this is going to be quite difficult.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Same problems as mine, since it's the same parts: Sure, it's buildable now, but it's 12 pages, and 77.4 centimeters tall -- that's 2 feet 6 inches. Now if folks want oversized papercraft, that's perfect, but I think we need to strike a balance between our two sizes...
>> Anonymous
>>105228
Wait what? 77cm? I put it at 16cm.
>> Anonymous
>>105229
OH CRAP. I just noticed the width. Wow. I've been stupid this whole time. Sorry sorry sorry!
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Not you flaming me; other folks in other threads.

Right now, I'm resizing it again to try to see how big you can make it without going over the size of a letter sheet of paper or cutting it as much as you cut yours... but the fact still remains that a bit of simplification in a few spots could make it buildable at any size.
>> TFX
>>105228

Just for fun factor, I did some rough estimation on the size of Myst island itself. If I made the marker switches about the size of a paperclip, the entire island as a papercraft would be 120cm x 50cm (4' by 1.6') including the ship and clock tower thingy.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Resize your pattern to 9.5 cm -- that will make it 18 inches (46 cm) tall. Looks almost buildable that way, 8 sheets before trying to cram more sheets on one page, and the small parts have at least SOME size to them.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Your model, 9.5 cm, parts on 7 pages.

http://rapidshare.com/files/72769335/anothermysttest.zip.html
>> Anonymous
>>105235
Yeah, that seems like it would be the smallest you could get it without it being overly hard. That being said, the smaller parts would still be a challenge, but nothing impossible.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Exactly... 18 inches is still a bit much for a paper model, but if you manage to give it a good texture or make it out of a paper that looks good (I'd suggest printing it on the BACK of something and folding it inside out to make it appear as a lineless model), the size wouldn't be an issue.
>> Ted
Guys, Download OpenOffice from Download.com, insert your pages of template into a text document with no borders, and export it as a .pdf

It would make things easier for everyone.

     File :-(, x)
Oh, and also, could someone either make the .obj files open to the board or make a short tutorial on how to extract the models? I'd be happy to help speed things along.

Plus, I REALLY want the Channelwood windmill.
>> TFX
>>105246

Seconding the extraction request, though not really expecting an answer. Papercraft-wise, the entire island would have to be modeled by hand anyway for proper scale, so that'll be a long-term project for 2008.

As for now, I plan on making a marker switch since that was suggested early in the thread. It'll be medium-size and have a working lever. Should it have a pop-open door, and if so, should that be when the switch is up or down?
>> Ted
>>105258

Pop-open when DOWN. That's how it worked in-game.
>> TFX
>>105264

But only when all the other switches are up :P
Down it is, I'll be working on this tomorrow and through the end of the week while reading up on some Pepakura tutorials.

channelwood windmill would rock, also Anyone played the other games?(like Myst 4 : Revelation)!?

>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Trying to take the rocket apart in cross sections is giving me a headache. Also, making it a .pdf does NOTHING. You lose the 3d instructions of how to put it together that a .pdo file gives you.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
     File :-(, x)
Now that I've taken it apart again and put it together in a bit better fashion, I've finally noticed that the three fins of the rocket are all malformed; there's a piece (circled) that ends up causing overlap if you join it anywhere.

Odds are that piece can be left out of the completed model, or fudged in there if anyone decides to testbuild. If you want this version of the rocket pattern, lemme know, and I'll throw it on rapidshare.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Got it to fit on six sheets of paper, and made it in letter and A4 versions so it'll print properly for most folks.

Not quite as flattened as>>105325wanted, but still quite workable compared to the earlier ones.

http://rapidshare.com/files/72930933/mystrocket.zip.html
>> TFX
Awesome stuff with the rocket, will try it out later.

Currently doing the marker switch the old fashioned way with graph paper and a pencil, since my 3D modelling skills leave much to be desired. Everything is coming together nicely, but I can't figure out any way to make the switch work the way it does in the game.
So, should I flip the switch behavior (up = open, down = lock) or try to find some super complex way to make it work the other way?

Color me confused. You've added a texture... and that's it? Or are there edits to the model as well?
>> THI
>>105593
Only two very slight edits. It's pretty much the same. :)
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Hopefully someone else will turn it into a workable .pdo this time around... and give it a name that folks on /rs/ will be able to tell that it's the workable one.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
Since nobody worked with the model (to my knowledge), I tried it out. The fins still have a misjoin in them, and now the needle on the nose is plotted as split apart, leaving you with a ton of very tiny triangles instead of a piece you can roll to make the needle.
>> THI
Just don't join the center part of the fins to he sides. The point is open but that's so it'd be easier to texture. I only nipped off the itty bitty tip. Just remove the flaps from that open edge. Slice up the body into more bands. Rotate for a better fit.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
I can't find how to re-close the nose in pepakura designer; I've hit a ton of buttons and no luck. Everything else... works. Point out how to reclose the nose, and I'll be done... and I'll leave out the three junk parts from the fins.
>> Anonymous
Don't close it. It doesn't have to be closed. I only cut off, I'm guessing, .5mm off the tip. Just think of it as a cylinder that narrows to almost closed. When printed and built, it will be unnoticable.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
     File :-(, x)
You don't seem to understand; the nose isn't buildable now -- see the lower left panel. That's all that's left of it.

Lower center panel are the pieces from each of the three fins that are unbuildable.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>105778
It's definitely looking better. As for the nose, the faces are all connected in the model, I triple checked. Can you manually join those faces? (Right click on edge-> Join/Disjoin, or something like that). And that layout can be really reduced. I have no clue about what you're talking about for the unbuildable pieces. I know they wouldn't be able to be combined in the layout since it's a curved corner. Let's just go with this and I'll do a build.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
>>105837
That's odd. The model included with the texture, when loaded, shows the nose with all red lines, and they can't be joined, and end up all seperated.

Good use of paper space to get the pieces to take up so few pages. I hadn't bothered trying to reangle pieces to cram more per page until the model problems were fixed.
>> THI
>>105859
Did you click the "combine isolated edges" (or something like that) option? Since it's a small part and an open edge, it may be trying to combine it in a weird way.
>> To sage or not to sage... that is the question. !!u7H15vJR6mX
That's not an option. The entire needle is made of red lines as soon as your model is opened in Designer, and they cannot be joined to one another. The old rocket before the edits did not have this bug.
