Deviantart is Anti- Papercraft??? Anonymous
(picture unrelated, just a plug of something im working on)

I dont know how many of you here has a DA account, but apparently they consider papercraft a "scrap" (as in located only in hidden mode, not in the actual gallery of the member).
I'm thinking about making a DA group for papercraft and push for a new catagory just for papercraft, so, what do you think?

Quote from DA submission guideline:
Paper craft, scrapbooks, modified notebooks, line drawings, prefabricated and kit automobile and airplane models, etc and scrapworthy objects do NOT belong here and will be moved to scraps automatically.

Silly bitches at deviant art only care for emo's poems and weeaboos "art".

>> Anonymous
Argh...that's crap! They should at least consider it a form of sculpture.
>> Anonymous
I think they're probably more against photos of completed papercraft (ex. say someone folded up something they didn't design and took a pic of it) rather than something you've modelled and flattened yourself. But of course what is a lowly mortal to say anything against the celestial DA admins (e-sarcasm).

A papercraft group would be neat but I've long since abandoned my DA account (out of laziness).

Good luck with the chocobo :)

Take a picture of it really artistically (with lighting and all that crap). Then grayscale it for drama. Deviantart dumbfucks won't be able to do anything about it.

thanks ppl. still havnt gotten are reply from them yet, >_>; we'll see how it goes.

and abour the baby chocobo, read the first line>>23017"something im working on", as in dont bother to request it cuz im still working on it!!!! :P just taking my time to reduce the polygons without warping the texture and making it easier for you guys to fold up when its done.

hahaha, that could be done too cuz someone here is working on the cloud model, just need another person to post the ff7 chocobo model, then rig and pose them.
>> gizmogal !MmLOyiCYJs
i have an account there (same username) and yeah, I've seen a few photos of papercrafts, but even if you do build them, you may not have designed them...
that's the main qualm they probably have with it.
>> jamis
>>23075
Maybe I should tame down the amount of detail on the cloud head then... If I can get the model of the chocobo that should be too hard... it might be better then just a cloud standing there...
>> Anonymous
>>23076then rig and pose them

Papercraft models are not action figures, you can't pose them after you build them. Cloud will have to be designed sitting on top of the chocobo, meaning you could start all over again with the Cloud model. Now the Cloud model that was ripped was a simple standing Cloud, and not many people have the 3D modelling skills to turn that into a good sitting Cloud. If you want to do a Cloud riding a Chocobo, then you should rip a 3D model of Cloud riding a Chocobo from the game, not seperate Cloud and Chocobo models.
And they'll probably be merged together: probably Cloud's bum and legs will be moving INSIDE the Chocobo's body. Not a problem in the game, but you'll have to do some serious 3D modelling to fix that for a papercraft...

>>23126
you are quite silly, "rig and pose" isnt what you do afterwords, its before making the pepakura pattern. That way is a lot more useful than taking the model straight from the game, cuz like you said, the polygons would intersect and couldnt make a good papercraft from that.

anyhooowwwww~ still depends on if someone can grab a chocobo model from the old ff7

>>23141you are quite silly, "rig and pose" isnt what you do afterwords, its before making the pepakura pattern.

So basically you're agreeing with the whole "you can't pose them after you build them"? So what's so silly? Oh wait, you mean your choice of words "rig and pose" and the lack of further information is silly because now there was no way to know you meant in the 3D model and not the papercraft? Okay then, glad we got that figured out!
Stop agreeing and then acting like you're not agreeing, it's a bit schizo...

>>23141That way is a lot more useful than taking the model straight from the game, cuz like you said, the polygons would intersect and couldnt make a good papercraft from that.

My idea: rip the model of Cloud sitting on a Chocobo and edit the parts that intersect. Your idea: rip a model of a Chocobo, and change the standing model of Cloud to a sitting one. Take your pick.
You're probably thinking: "all I have to do is bend the legs!" Trust me: just do that, and the model will suck... A Cloud sitting on a Chocobo is different from a standing Cloud with his legs bent... Please don't get a job in the 3D modelling/games industry if you don't understand that.

>>23153
i mean, its stilly to think to "RIG" a paper model, rigging automatically means in 3D program >_>;; how the heck do you rig it in paper?????

Just so you know, why it would be easier to edit the already working model of Cloud:
the whole model itself already isnt attached! as in, his arms, legs, and body isnt even welded to the body (yayy for squeenix's first try). personally i think its easier to pose the finished-edit cloud instead of RE-doing whats already done.

:P why dont you go take a look at the actual model first before you talk, eh?
>> Anonymous
you know. now that i think about it, since hte legs and the arms are already detached from the body to begin with, it is possible to make it posable with brads (kind of like the old gingerbread figure dolls kindergardeners make, or like clock hands). yes it would only move in one axis, so the legs still would need some modification, but heck, movable arms are fun :D
>> jamis
yes, it's quite obvious you can't pose them afterwards. Editing the models really isn't to hard after you figure out how the whole 3d-mesh-to-papekura-template processes works and what needs to be done in 3d to make it work. That's why I have been having problems so far.

I doubt you'd be able to rip a mesh of cloud sitting on a chocobo and the chocobo itself at the same time. Their meshes. The game engine morphs the meshes into the correct positions to have the charactors do different things.

So what you'd need to do is something like:
1. extract the pose for cloud sitting on the chocobo
2. move the cloud mesh pieces into that position
3. extract the pose for teh chocobo in mid run (or whatever pose...)
4. extract and move the chocobo mesh into that position
5. load the cloud and the chocobo meshes into teh same project and edit it so there are no intersecting pieces (such as clouds legs passing through the chocobo body)

Then you'd either want to texture it in the 3d modeler or afterwards when the templates completed.

Really it's not to hard of a process. It just takes time, the meshes and the poses. Hell get me the mesh for the chocobo and I'll see what I can do about the poses.

>>23157i mean, its stilly to think to "RIG" a paper model, rigging automatically means in 3D program
No it does not automatically mean that, only in your mind; it's not like it's the "official" term for editing a standing 3D model into a sitting one...

>>23157how the heck do you rig it in paper?????
Exactly! that's what's all the confusion is about. I agree you can't do that, and you agree you can't do that! Again, you're agreeing with me and acting like you're not, what's up with that??

>>23157Just so you know, why it would be easier to edit the already working model of Cloud: the whole model itself already isnt attached! as in, his arms, legs, and body isnt even welded to the body (yayy for squeenix's first try).
And it will be the same for a sitting cloud model that has been ripped from the game. It will be made using the same original "scarecrow" model that has been used on the standing model.

>>23157personally i think its easier to pose the finished-edit cloud instead of RE-doing whats already done.
Sigh... That's the flaw in your logic! It's not already done! The STANDING model of Cloud is (almost I hope) done. You'd have to WORK ON IT to MAKE it into a SITTING model, since all the edits that were made on it were for the STANDING model!! A bent leg connects to your hips differently than a straight leg, so the connection will be different too. YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE THOSE CONNECTIONS ALL OVER AGAIN, YOU CANNOT USE THE SAME CONNECTIONS!!! That's why it's NOT EASIER to use the standing model: you'll have to change the whole pose of the model, and then you'd also have to change the connections. If you rip a sitting cloud model, you can SKIP THAT FIRST STEP. How can that not be easier than what you're suggesting???

>>23161
Exactly: some "3D model rippers" will only let you rip the "scarecrow" model, but other rippers for different games will also let you rip the poses, and that's what you want!

It's not a problem if you can't rip Cloud and the Chocobo simultaneously (allthough with some rippers you can do that too; with some of them you can even rip the whole scene and everything in it (characters, world, etc) that's playing on the screen), but don't go telling me it's easier to use a standing Cloud than to use a sitting Cloud...
>> jamis
>>23163
I do wish I could get all the stuff I need to rip the models myself and see if I can get a sitting model.

But as a last resort it would be possible to setup an IK chain and position the standing cloud model in the pose... but you are right... that sitting pose would be much quicker
>> jamis
oh poo one more question... how tall should this standing model really be?

It's harder as it gets smaller obviously... but how big is a good size?
>> Anonymous
sigh, donno why you guys are getting all worked up on how to rip/extract/build/pose/etc the model anyhow. :P doesn't really matter, im just saying what i think would work, you can say what you think can work.
it really doesnt matter unless you are actually doing it, and since I'm not working on the cloud/chocobo rider project any time soon, you guys tackle it the way you want.

>_>; seesh. so much hate, so much burning, so little done :P

you're right, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset anybody... Let's all hold hands and sing "kumbaya"...
>> Anonymous
o.o

kumbayaaaaa---

btw jamis> 10inch tall? usually i resize afterword and figure out the size of hte smallest piece to make sure its actually doable.... :D a super large one would be really cool tho! kinda like the superlarge eva haha
>> jamis
>>23170
ah well right now clouds head is about 1.5 inches small... It's gonna have to be bigger then that so the pieces are large enough to fit together... and so you can get your fingers through to hold stuff together...

I'm making good progress though! I'm gonna have to cut out yet another head (i've cut out 4 so far) but I haven't had everything set up so I can complete the head yet. I'm not gonna start texturing until I'm happy with at least one head model.

And more related to before, the head is the hardest part of the whole thing. After I get that done, any pose should be rather easy to make a template for.

I'll post another thread after I get this head done...

awesome! in theory, would it be easier to do his spikes 2 side polygon, so like, 2 triangular planes together?

wow we went totally OT... ^^;
