Fixing existing models to use for papercraft IS a very time consuming process, it's why so many papercrafts aren't very good: many people don't have the patience/time to do so. There are softwares with features that will reduce the polygon count, but that's not the problem: the problem is that lowering the polygon count needs to be done in such a way, that it gets easier to make in paper. Softwares don't take that into account: they are meant for digital modeling, and will just produce hollow shells, based on some algorithm that doesn't try to make the shapes simpler for papercraft purposes. Long story short: for better results, do it by hand in a simple software. ;) For fast results: don't bother except for yourself.
