So I apparently have access to a 3-D printer and a computer-controlled 4’ x 8’ router table and scanner, as well as traditional craft shop machines through my university. All free too. What should I make first?

I'm thinking use the router table as a giant craft robo. Or make something out of metal. So many possibilities. Give me some ideas!

Pic is of some modular kiragami thing made with a craft robo.

/po/ you aren't ambitious enough. I'm thinking flat pack furniture for my apartment next year.

Or one of the wooden dinosaur skeletons. 6' tall.

YES, pics of finished product

Step 1) Head to Toys R Us
Step 2) Buy every single Pokemon action figure
Step 3) ???
Step 4) You know, it'd probably be easier just to model the things ourselves. Profit, I guess.

fuck yes!! especially if you can make them out of metal, cause then you can actually shine them like in the game

This isn't as hard as it sounds. Get hold of one o' them fancy art projectors and project the individual pieces of the skeleton puzzle onto blue construction foam, corrugated cardboard, or if you're feeling ambitious, wood. Voila. We did it in college with construction foam...

Can you do this?

how'd you get a pic of my room?

I was thinking... many people spend a lot of money in 20cm dolls, so they would do anything for one of these (robots/sentai are good too)

Better give-me one real size doll or I will need to kill again!

Not your room, those don't have a pooper.

mathematical models
you could sell small ones as jewelery, and big ones are just awesome
make the landscape from the holograph in Myst
Make an exact copy of your face. a bust perhaps?
make a custom dildo (serious suggestion! collaborate with girls. FTW)
make yourself a set of throwing knives
make yourself metal bracers, with attachment ports for the throwing knives
make a model of a house but really cool somehow.
or make something useful?
You could make a really sweet set of polyhedral dice, or polyhedral rings, or polyhedral glasses frames

how about polyhedral polyhedrons?

went to visit the lab. I need STL files for the printed. Havent had time to really do anything yet, 5 midterms and a paper due 2 weeks.

why don't you try to make something like Theo Jansen's animaris?

For well over a decade Theo Jansen has rigorously experimented ‘with the making of a new nature. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature.’ He talked about how protein acts as the key element in the structure and functioning of all living cells and that he wanted to use his own protein (plastic tubes) to act as the building block for his very own creations.

Yeah. If you have any .stl files i can print them out. Otherwise im going to have to learn solidview or something. I have 3 tests next week and had 2 tests this week, so i havent had time to think about this much.

I also could probably convert any of the following formats to .stl. huh.

* Pro/ENGINEER (*.PRT.*)
* SolidWorks (*.SLDPRT)
* Rhino 3D (*.3DM)
* STEP (*.STEP/*.STP)
* IGES (*.IGES/*.IGS)
* Parasolid (*.X_T)
* ACIS (*.SAT)
* Neutral (*.NEU)

mathmamatical models look really cool as well.

I really want to make some of the stuff on this site: http://www.bathsheba.com/

You could also make a model of a DNA strand, that would be pretty incredible.

These aren't CAD files so are you sure they'll be alright? And do they need to be in any certain way like a certain poly count?
