okay /po/ i know this is the noobiest question ever but i need to know how many gsm 110lb is. i tried online converters and got this

Text: 110.0 lbs = 162.8 gsm
Cover: 110.0 lbs = 297.88 gsm
Index: 110.0 lbs = 199.1 gsm
Vellum: 110.0 lbs = 240.9 gsm
Tag: 110.0 lbs = 179.3 gsm
which is right? any ausfags wanna help out?

I don't know about the conversion thing, but i've been using 200 grams/m2 stuff and it works pretty well.

There's no exact conversion. 110lbs means that a ream (some fixed number) of paper weighs 110 pounds. This doesn't take into consideration the size of the paper like gsm does. So if one sheet is larger than another it could have a higher weight rating even though it's thinner than the other.

Your different conversions are referring to different paper dimensions.

True, but that's no problem at all: you can take into account the size of the actual paper, so you can compare again.
The problem is, that the US "system" states that it takes one ream (500 sheets) of paper and the weight of that is the paper weight of that paper.
The trick is that they don't weigh a ream of the paper the size you're buying, but a ream of basis paper, from which the paper you're buying is cut. For US Letter (8,5x11 inches) the basis paper is 17x22 inches: it's cut in four to produce the letter sized paper. So this means they don't weigh 500 sheets (one ream) but 2000. That's a factor 4 that you could be off with your conversion.

and for large .......?
and you can print on cardstock right?
up till now ive just been using 90gsm paper

It's just personal preference, if you find 160 gsm works for you, keep using it. Why switch just because somebody says use 120 gsm or 200 gsm? When we say you should use 200 gsm, and you go to a store and it doesn't have it, don't bother travelling all over to find 200 gsm paper. Try something that they do have, and see I fit works for you, it's not worth it to spend a lot of time hunting down the exact cardstock someone tells you when you 're probably completely happy with something readily available to you. ;)

Some printers can't handle cardstock: at my school, I tried to feed cardstock to the printer at my school that's also a copier (you know, big freezer size things and it wouldn't take it. Most home printers can handle it though, and even it doesn't, all what will happen is either a) nothing or b) it gets jammed and you'll have to remove it. Your printer won't magically blow up, just try it, it'll probably have no problems.
up till now ive just been using 90gsm paper. That's your average printer paper that you normally use. Of course it can be used, but it buckles easily even when you press it just a little, even on small papercrafts, that's why most people use thicker paper. 160-200 gsm is what most people use, and most people just use one thickness regardless if it's small or big.
