Hey Anon, Anon here. I need your help making a rotating joint I've been thinking about. Basically it's a module like in the picture. You're supposed to glue the inside faces, stick the modules through, then pull down on the pull tab so that the two inside faces touch together and the glue dries. Unfortunately, I don't have access to any of that 3d modelling / Pepakura stuff, so can someone help me out and model it and post it? In the provided picture, it has four sides, but I was hoping it could be done with 8. Thanks to whoever takes this up.

green is the paper your supposed to stick it through?
>> Anonymous
Yup, and then you glue the bottom glue tabs to the other piece of paper you want to make a joint out of.

Why so difficult?
Take a look at Ninjatoe's Advance Wars tanks, a lot of them have rotating turrets and it's basically just an axle with two flanges that on side you glue to the turrent, and the other side you don't glue to the hull of the tank.

Your idea seems a bit over-engineered while papercraft is usually better when it's kept simple.
But maybe your method is not difficult, and I just don't understand it, I'd love to see a prototype. There's no need to make it in 3DCG/Pepakura, just take some scrap cardstock, design it by hand, take it apart again and scan in the parts (or rather a good tracing of the parts).
I'd love to build it to see if it's simple and if it works.

Hmm, I can't quite tell how the tops swivel (somewhat new to /po/), but I think they need to be right-side-up? I don't think I can decypher how it works without building it. I need the joint to be held up-side-down. It's for that Mech Warrior 4 Vulture model's chin turret.

once you pull it closed the glue sets, and the joint has a backing that is inside the pivot

Oh yeah, I forgot to say, I've already closed the head of the Vulture, that's why I need something that can be stuck through, then deployed.

is it just going to be piulled so it can be glued in place?
because if it's that i wonder why you wouldn't want to just build it much easier than that
kinda like in my pic

No, it's supposed to be glued on the inside facesSo that when the tab is pulled down, the two inside faces of each arm bridge thing touch together and can't fit back through the hole.

Try your idea by modifying the Mechwarrior part so it has your "folding flange".
If it doesn't work, open up the chin part by carefully sticking your knife between the glueing flaps and the parts that are glued to the glueing flaps.
Usually you can do this without much damage if you work patiently, but if you do make too much of a mess, just print out the parts you destroyed and make new ones.

Alright. I'll try it out and keep you posted.

He means turret.
Did this solve your confusion?

Did you just do a zoom without pictures?

Alright, I pretty much butchered doing it by hand, so I drew something up in The GIMP. It's small, but it should be easily resizible. Also, it doesn't have to be pretty; just functional.

Made the tabs bigger after I realized this is REALLY small. Use either version you want.
