Depends on how much experience you have. Here's how it went for me. I started HMC seven months after I started papercrafting. I had the same reasoning as you did. I had waaaaaaaay too much time on my hands, so I figured I could do it. I haven't finished it yet, but I haven't worked on it in about 8 months, and before that I took a large break from it. Here are a few things you need to be prepared for.
1) This is going to take a long, LONG, time. Even though you might have a lot of time on your hands, so did I. Eventually you get bored with not having finished a project in a long time, so you might feel like "well I'll do something easier and then come back to it". If you do that, you may never want to come back to it, because of the challenge and the time it will take. Even models that take 3-4 hours to complete seem like an easy breeze when compared to this. So the number one thing you must keep in mind is: IF YOU START THIS, YOU MUST FINISH IT BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!
2) Be sure to study the diagrams and finished pictures, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY carefully. I've made several mistakes that I'd like to take back, but now it's too late. I either live with them, or start over, and I sure as hell don't want to start over. In keeping with this, make sure you get every piece JUST right so it will look as good as possible. You don't want to spend so much time on a model just to have it looking like you put it together in a day.
So, as long as you're confident that you can do it, put this much time and effort into it, you'll be fine. Don't be like me and procrastinate. It's still sitting up on the shelf...incomplete.
