Ok /po/, halp time once more. I'd like to try my hand at designing using pepakura or whatever, and have my project picked out.

I want to modify the chao you see in this pic into the various forms of Chaos, starting with a NiGHTS chao.

My problem is such: I've been unable to figure out how, if at all possible, to let pepakura let me start something from scratch.

As such, how may I just start assembling pieces, or do I need to start with an actually 3D image? If a 3D image is necessary, how may I acquire a good one for the Chao?

The Chao (and all other papercrafts) from Chao's laboratory (http://www.sonicteam.com/chao/en/gift_papercraft.html) are bitmaps; there's not much you can dow ith those in Pepakura other than using them as textures (don't go try that, it's stupid ;o).

Pepakura is used to open up a 3D model and to unfold that into templates like you see on Chao's laboratory. So yeah, to use Pepakura designer, you need a 3D model.
Either your rip one from a game that has NiGHTS Chao in it (in 3D form of course), or you model it yourself from scratch.

What would be a good program to use to model from scratch? I've done some modeling just on trial and error using paper, but a program would make life easier, and less wasteful.

blender is easy to learn, plus its free. and if you're purely going to model within the realms of papercraft, something like 3d studio max might be a bit overkill..

Does Anyone have a NiGHTS Chao model/instructions?

Sorry for being such a n00b, but how exactly would I rip a 3D model from a game? I'm getting really into papercraft, and I have pepakura and blender 3D, and I want to make some rare papercrafts.

So nobody has any of the other forums of the Chao =/
