Just a few models I've worked on. The jar of lucky stars, the bunny (John Montroll) and seagull (Robert J. Lang) are for a friend on his birthday. The lantern-flower I made at a buddhist gathering, and the swan was a 500 piece set bought at a korean gift store in Cali.

You wouldn't say 'blah' at the 500 piece swan if you made one. Just imagine folding the same triangle 500 times, making sure they stick together right, and having the mess fall apart if it doesn't. >:3

There's your cute little star.

For the stars:
You can buy strips of paper of various colors precut to this size. For example they have it with the other origami stuff at Uwajimaya in Seattle.
It comes with the directions for how to make the stars as well.

the flower either looks plastic, or maybe it is creped bits of tissue, shaped into a petal and twisted lightly at the ends and just glued together at the centre?

they all look nice, good job.

Does anyone have a video or pictures of this being made? I get to the last step and I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong.

Here's another diagram for the li'l star, if it helps anyone else (easier to read, too!)

Wow, everyone is going gaga over the buddhist flower! Alright folks, I don't have a template or anything, but I can tell you how it was made.

The base of the whole thing is just a small paper cup. Get a bigger one if you want a big one to hang outside; the flower I have is about 6 inches high after completion, so the cup is about 4 inches. The best example they had was a HUGE flower that looked at least 3 feet in diameter. I have no idea what they used as a base for it; maybe a bucket?

The colored strips of paper you can find in any craft store; they're all cut the same size and crimped lenthwise. Take one end and twist it into a point. There! It's a petal.

Now make a shit-ton of those petals in all the colors you want, and green for the base leaves. Have a dish or saucer of regular elmer's glue ready (yes, a dish; its easier to dip and wipe off the excess than to dab straight from the bottle).

You start with the cup, which is turned over so the open side is facedown. You'll dip and paste the petals from top to bottom; try not to get too much glue or the petals will slip and slide everywhere, and only just a tiny bit of the lowest part of the petal. The petals should be curved inward.

Now continue your way down, trying not to paste a petal directly over the previous petal; space them out evenly.

When you get to the bottom of the cup, leave a small space for the base leaves; the leaves will be curved out instead of inward like the petals, and they will curve underneath the rim of the cup. Tada!

Hints: This is very messy business; I suggest laying down some newspaper to catch any glue drips.
