Sweet, I was wondering what else you were going to work on.

I don't know how well it's going to work as a papercraft with all those inset pieces, though. Try and make it one "skin", so there's no tricky hidden pieces or things that go through each other.

As for the material, Staples (and I'm sure most office or arts supplies places) have material you could use.

since I'm rebuilding kanti from scratch, there's still a bit to model and finish up yet, as well as laying it all out for print on large paper (you may need to do 11x17, since pieces may require large areas), but it's coming along.

I'm checking out gurren right now, and I know I have to do a bit of tweaking to make it optimal for printing without having three boxes within eachother, and changing things around so I can add joints and such.

got lots of "real" work for my "job" to do in between all of this, so things are moving a bit slow, but I'll be sure to announce any strides in progress both here and at the paperworks.

Speaking of which, you can keep progress on any updates by visiting paperworks.wikidot.com/daijitsu and looking for the project you want. I haven't put up project pages for gurren or kanti quite yet, but they're in the works.

progress check delivered-

I've done a lot of geometry cleanup and re-building to account for ease of papercraft building, since the way pongoo has modeled it didn't account for how pieces hold together, or interact. There have been a few instances in which geometry has passed through other geometry, which (unless you're tricky) is impossible with physical objects.

long story short, still cleaning stuff up.

I think I may work on printing out the head tonight, and figure out how I want to devise a joint for the neck. It may be a self-contained free floating pivot... but we'll see how well that works... could be too loose.

I just finished tearing the head apart to figure that all out about 20 minutes ago! haha.

I have currently crunched the head to about 19 pages. yeah. Better yet, the smallest scale I would allow it to be would make it end up about the same size as my demonstration in the attached picture.

that's SEVEN feet and TEN inches.
(2.388 meters)

Update. Just finished up the face... the way pongoo's model is set up, the area from the upper lip to the bottom of the eyes is disconnected from everything else, and thus just kind of sits there really loosely, and falls out of place real easy.

I'll add a little geometry to hold it solidly in place, as well as keep the jaw straight (it kind of flops around right now).

though... I think if you just use a wire, you can make the expression a bit poseable using these features. the way the nose/eyebrow section is set up, all I have to do is tweak the nose's position and he can have angry eyes, surprised eyes, and a few interesting looks inbetween. If I couple that with the mouth, we'll have a really unique piece on our hands!

poke.

Here's the update- Pongoo, I'm having trouble importing the OBJ. It keeps telling me "Obsolete Data". Could you re-export the data to obj, or better yet, export it to 3ds or dxf?

I'd like to look at the new files to see how they differ, because I may just restart the test build if it's too different, but I do have some notes on what needs help so far-

•the horns are floppy the way they're set up now. I need a barbecue skewer (giant toothpick) to keep them still.

•as great as the pieces are made, I'm having trouble keeping them solidly attached to each other. Needs some extra glue tabs put down.

•I am going to stress the fact that you will need HEAVY PAPER. 22# isn't cutting it in the least right now.

•When printing, I want to point out that you should have "Tabs textured with adjacent faces" on, so white space from mistakes is cut down to a minimum. Bad fitting is imminent on smaller pieces.

•may need to add guide marks for pieces that sit on top of each other loosely, because securing them without knowing HOW they're supposed to be secured is a bad idea.

that's all for now.
>> Mankip
That's looking really great, Dai! With those joints you designed, it should make for a really cool poseable Gurren Lagann. Though, if and when a PDO gets made, will it have to be large size? As awesome as it might be, it might not be so printer-friendly. XD

sup /po/ I edited the head to be a wearable helmet. Does /po/ want me to upload or rather wait for Dai to finish his. I would test build it myself but printer ran out of ink on the first page.
>> dai
you can go ahead and release the 'wearable' size, I'm not editing out the inner-works so you can't wear mine anyways, not to mention that despite the face's size, the head altogether is actually just a little smaller than an actual human's, and so I'd have to scale it up again ANYWAYS.

TL;DR- Go ahead and release it!
>> Anonymous

>>188593
i think it'll be fairly larger, just not 7'10" large.
hopefully a foot or more would be easily possible. that'd make those pesky small bits easier to work with.
>> dai
>>188713

the only real trouble I had with small bits was the horn, since it was a little odd working inside it when I got to the ends.

Lesson learned- Work the horns from the tips towards the middle.

I think it could be scaled up to about... 8' 3", for several reasons- First, if your house is of standard measure, you've got 8' ceilings.

second, is that the head is JUST about the same size as a human. If you want him to look like a BIG FUCKING POWERFUL human-sized robot, the head should be the right size, and the body be bulked up all to hell.

if you wanted it to be about human-height, the head would look tiny and insignificant.

Nice, is that the wearable one or your one? Is it me or does it seem elongated? Maybe its just me. Is it missing something?
>> dai
>>189102

it's the one I made earlier, and it looks funky because it's stretched long to fit the fan...

but it's funny as hell when the fan's on, and turning side to side. The head bobs up and down from the air flow :D

What weight of paper did you use to make it?

Just curious.
>> dai
>>189115

it's currently in 22#, and floppy as all hell. I suggest- no, REQUIRE anyone building the final models when they are released to use something MUCH thicker than standard printer paper. Thickest you can find.

Gonna be expensive, though.
>> dai
oh, sweet- found a stack of 47# "double-sided" matte paper. This could prove useful.

...that's almost twice as much! :B

I assume 110lb cardstock would be heavy enough?
also, how big is the regular model looking to be? 30cm or so?
I'm building the canti you guys worked on, and if it's any indication to your skill, this is gonna be a helluva fun model to build.

nope, i am wanting a slightly bigger one. So will probably wait till dai is done with his and then build a sized down version

light years isn't a measure of distance...
>> Anonymous
>>189328
Technicaly it is... the distance that can be traveled by light in one year's time.
>> opm881
>>189333
no, cotten is right. You cant measure the height of something in lightyears. Light years is a measurement of velocity, not length
>> eosthream
>>189335

then how come astronomers' state distance from earth to star X as light years?

Again /po/ proves to be part of 4chan by not being smarter than /b/.

have proven themselves to be as dumb as a bag of hammers, I am at least glad that they seem to know that it has something to do with linear measurement in some fashion.
FAR too many people I know seem to think that it's a measure of time - like a thousand years.

Nonetheless, those two are dumb as a bag of hammers.

Dai, how much ink have you used so far?

...I really need to start trying to refill my cartridges myself before I try something like this...
>> dai
>>189376

I use a big laser printer (magicolor 2300), which takes gigantic toner cartridges. I'm sure I'm in for a new tank sooner or later... but the damn thing's on it's last leg, and is starting to double-impression some pages. I may just go out and find a nice little 4-in-one, since the toner cartridges cost $80 it isn't like I'm going to be spending much more... >:C

should be a thread a little ways back with canti in it. That's where the rapidshit should be.
do you by any chance use a mac? cause if so you're SOL if you want to view .pdo's(that is unless you emulate windows)
use pepakura viewer for opening .pdo's
you can find it easily through google.
just be forewarned that the .pdo's of canti are in an exploded view, so some internal parts will be shown outside of where they should go. most of them are white and boxy, so it's not too hard to figure out.

I'm almost done with the human-scale helmet. I caved in and put Canti on hold cause I just had to build SOMETHING Gurren Lagann. It's driving me nuts waiting for the whole thing :<
it's really fun to build, but have fun getting all the big pieces (face, sides of head, top of head) to stick together since there's no tabs. be ready to improvise and use some tape, paper, or if you're good at pepakura designer add some tabs in.
it also turned out too small to wear though, pepakura viewer scaled it down when it went from paper to printer :(
maybe I could make my cats wear it.

It seems to me that the 32 cm size is too small for human heads. Has anyone tried to resize it to 45+ cm? My Ironman helmet alone is about 32 cm from top to bottom. With the horn, Guren Lagann should be considerably taller.

I tried building the helmet to test the size...

My head is pretty big, but you're right, 32cm is still much too small...

I might try it upscaled to a nice 45cm

I'm so going to make this once the pdos for the model appear. I don't really want to make a human size version :P
