ok guys, I can't take it anymore.

I think I'm gonna try and do some 3D modeling to make us a Megaman Legends model.
thing is, I know we don't have any rips from the game to work with, so is it possible to make a 3D model using a reference picture, with different views?
I think this is possible cause I've seen it done before in some of my japanese hobby magazines.(I think)
Also, what program would one recommend for getting started?
Any input would be really appreciated.

Photo modelers or something like that. On their websites, you can see how they take pictures of side top, front and back views and maybe some more, then the software does some computing, and a perfect 3D models rolls out.

Teach yourself 3D modeling by starting with a cube, then as you get better, in a few months or maybe in a few years depending on your own skills and enthusiasm to really go for it, you can make a Megaman papercraft that will be 100% to your liking.

wow way to troll up my thread from the get go asshole.

I'm asking for a program that basically lets you trace over different views of a 2D model to construct a 3D model from those views. BY HAND NOT AUTOMATICALLY.
I DO know better than that. Anything automatic yields far worse results than doing it yourself.
I'm not looking for some "magic program" or something along those lines. I'm looking for a semi-user friendly 3D modeling program where I can use different 2D views to construct the 3D model by hand.

this is a great idea. we really need some megaman papercraft. instead of bothering w/ all the pics, i would just download megaman 64 and rip the models with the 1964 emulator along with lemmy's plug-in. if this works, than please make a gesellschaft papercraft, i need one for my desk.

Its possible to model things from three 2D images. one from the front, one from the side and one from the back. There are tutorials on how to do it on the net that should tell you the basic concept, mostly they are written for 3dstudio max as many people seem to use that one. You only have to pick some 3D modelling software up somewhere and adapt the concept. If your images are taken at some angle it may become a little more difficult but it should still be doable.
Extracting the model out of the game would possibly be easier though.

ok, guys, change of plans.

as per your advice, I;ve gotten 1964, lenny's plugin, and a rom of megaman 64.

the only problem is, I need an n64 controller hooked up via usb to be able to play the game so I can rip the models.
I've ordered an adapter from amazon, but it won't be here for a few days.
I'll update you as soon as it gets here.

When it says controller not found that just means that you haven't configured the controller plugin. You don't need a specific controller to use an emulator, you could even use the keyboard if you wanted to.

haha, wow, I just picked up megaman 64 a couple days ago and was thinking of doing this exact thing. Some of the airships looked like they'd be nice papercrafts.
2 problems though, I don't know how to reduce polygons or go from sketchup/etc model to pepakura. Any tuts on either of those topics?

The darkened colors were because of something in deep explorer, so the model was ok.
I have no idea how to turn these into decent papercraft, so if anyone's interested, I'll upload some more models.

Well, it's an SKP alright.. I'm sorry, but I can't work with Google Sketchup at all... Can Sketchup export 3DS or OBJ? I don't see those kinds of options anywhere, not even on the Export panel.

I tried to change it into papercraft, so I split it up into what I thought would be the eaiest way and exported it as 3ds, but I don't quite get pepakura designer.

yup, teisl is the eldest and has green "armor" (or whatever it is) and white hair. and yes, the gesellschaft is the big green ship with a skull on the front in which the bonnes live in. if i recall, then teisl's "armor" is pretty blocky, so it would make a good papercraft. thanks for replying

yeah, those. There's no option in sketh up that I can see either, but, in pd, if you go to 3dmodelwindow>textureconfiguration>specifytextureimage, you can only select bmp, gif, or jpg. So I thing you'd have to do it by hand.

I decided to leave the one armed guy alone for a while til I get better as that's going to require some model editing. (the feet and arm aren't attached to the body.)
I started on the gesselschaft yesterday (Since I thought it would be an easy start) and once I finish the flaps, it /should/ be complete.

max save files aren't compatible with earlier versions so a .max from max 9 will not open in max 1-8, and gmax (did they fix this in 2008?) any way if u have 2008 alls good, as it will except earlier version saves.
