Cardboard is like a thin plate of wood: it has a strong direction, and a weak direction. And it's also not very strong when you apply a force in the middle of a flat sheet, but can be quite strong if you push on the edge in the directions of the "flutes". So the secret to making a cardboard chair is putting as much vertical "reinforcements" under the seat as needed, in the "flutes'" direction. But they might buckle, so also put in reinforcements at a 90 degree angle to prevent this.
