UPDATE on my work Urashiman !cfvcNf4hiQ
Currently trying to code a model extractor for FF8 and FF9. I'm making some progress with FF8 models but the Texture UVW is still fucked up and sometimes bonestructure fucks up too.

Keep going my friend, It does not matter that there are problems, it must be for the greater good.

Hey this is the other guy working on PS1 ripping. Any info you can divulge that isn't already available elsewhere(qhimm wiki)

..and I'm the other guy who was on the ps1 ripping thread;
Urashiman, what tools/technics did you use to rip this model? I tried my way with GLintercept and 3D ripped DX, but since the modeling is processed before the graphic board, all it gives me is a screenshot of the model, only from a specific point of view...
anyway, any help would be -VERY- much appreciated

FF8 and FF9 papercafts... DON'T GIVE UP!

I use C++ and Delphi. The rippers you mentioned suck for playstation emulators. PSXemu plugins use the "easy way" to render 3D stuff, therefore projecting everything on a plane. I try to get directly into the file and do a real converter for the 3d models. Currently I'm only able to extract fieldmodels, no battle models.
My understanding for FF9 models is "alphaware", i'm only able to decompile the big FF9.IMG on the disks right now.

this is not PS1 ripping, because I'm only able to rip FF8(PC) and (in the future) FF9(PS1) models.

I didn't say something about, that I'm going to make a FF8/9 Papercraft. Only showed some progress on a 3D object extractor for FF8/9 :D

Been there done that? Sounds so familiar: a long time ago I played around with a FF8 extractor, and it had the the same flaws as you say you're encountering: some textures are messed up, and sometimes the legs and arms are in a weird position, to say the least...
Are you using the source code for that program? Trying to imrpove it? If so, a VERY good thing to do, would to try and implement a feature so that you can view the animations used in the game, and then export the charcater in that position, because the standard pose would not be very interesting for papercraft...

nope, I was browsing the qhimm forums for information about ff8 file formats and FF9 stuff. I'm coding the stuff from scratch (only with the knowledge how to interpret FF8 model format). The problem is, there is still some data in the models that I don't use, or simply nobody knows what the data is for. this is why I need to try around (trail and fail) what the data does. I will open up a devblog on my website soon so that I'm able to keep people up to date on my work with those formats. FF9 models currently only give me vertex junk, but I hope to get some results in the future. there was a FF8 battle model viewer around the internet, but you are only able to view the models (no converting possible).

if you people have some suggestions for my tool I will notice them down and try my best to implement them (if possible).

I'm doing the same for ff7. Though I haven't had much time lately. I wrote a python script that rips from the LGP files thus far. I also did a little bit of reverse engineering on Xenogears though I haven't made a lot of progress there yet. Isolated the main loop, looks like it might be a threaded app but I dunno. I should have time to look at it more in depth this weekend.

Perhaps we could work together.

I don't know much about FF7 file structures (LGP for PC version) and I don't even play xenogears. I don't have much time too, but I try to get some of my spare time into decompiling and understanding how stuff works, to get better results. But if you want to contact me for some reason just contact me via my website :D

Make them in a fucking stance. If you're going to do it, do it right.

No one wants to just see a model standing. I'd rather see a bull, shit.
