'Do Nothing Machine' Tarage !DqN1ECWgHk
Hey /po/! I was over in /toy/, and I came across this 'Do Nothing Machine'. Now, this one is made of wood, but I got to thinking, one could be made out of paper quite easly.

Now, I'm no good with that papercraft software, but I was wondering if perhaps any of you guys could try to make this. Seems like an intresting little toy.

what does it do?

nothing apparently.

It looks like some kind of wood puzzle.

in fact is a complex machine that demostrates that a circular movement can be converted into 2 linear movements, and in FACT is used in industry machines, so I dont know who put that text but it only shows their ignorance

Basically...

This.

Meh, I wouldn't have brought if over here if I didn't think it was neat.

To me, I see the sine and cosine waves.

actually, the version shown in OP's pic is a toy literally called the do nothing machine. i used to have one when i was a kid.

yes there's an industrial version of it, but this is just a small wooden toy version for spinning around and watching the blocks move around.

I really don't think paper would be able to take that pressure

If you made it loose enough...

I think the biggest problem would be the axles are. Then again, I've made them before out of paper when I was a little kid.

That and I've seen you guys with paper clocks, so this seems possible.

Maybe if you use really heavy paper

or maybe that's the reason is made of wood

I could see myself being entertained by that though. At least for a few minutes every day

Well, I don't know about you guys, but I use cardstock whenever I build anything papercraft related.

two of these should do

so do I, but it still might bend a little while you're turning it

A quick way to do the board.
Basically, it's a cross made of 4 identical peices.
>> Anonymous
This'd be a lot easier just to make out of wood.
>> Anonymous
>>125176
If you make it loose, there's a good chance the peice will miss when when it crosses the gap in the middle.

Good point...

Anyone wanna try tackling this with one of the model builders?

Decided to try something different. Instead of square arches, I've just made triandles (should be easier and stronger). Also, added a point onto the bullet thing so not finding the track shouldn't be a problem.

Dang, I wish I had card stock.
And a printer, for that matter.
(I'm up at college, and all)

alright, i think i've got the top mostly worked out.
basically, for rotation, i've placed (not glued) a cylinder into a slightly larger open cylinder to allow free rotation.
as for the handle, i used a triangle and doubled it back on itself to increase strength.
fuck...i may actually have to make this

wow
i just happen to know i have instructions on how to build one out of legos
convince me to take pics and post
>> Tarage !DqN1ECWgHk
Well, know atleast that I'm chearing you on!

That is actually pretty damn cool.

Didn't know a circular motion could be converted to that..

and this is where you would all be wrong, the handle traces out the path of an ellipse which is important for all sorts of stuff.

see: http://www.woodweb.com/knowledge_base/A_Jig_for_Drawing_or_Cutting_Ellipses.html

please do! /toy/ would love you for it!

no really, its a toy. I had one as a kid.

but kudos for a real world application of its motion! =)

I have one labeled as a bullshit crusher!

This is awesome

Bumping in hopes of a model
>> Anonymous
I've more or less got my model and dimensions mapped out. If someone can direct me to easy to use 2d modeling software, I should have the model done pretty quick. All I need to be able to do is specify line length/angle.

anyone remember Klutz books?

in the lego one they have a "Kuntucky Do Nothing" which is basically the same as that but built outa legos
