I think you could do it: 1) "realistic", meaning not like a real person of course, but as close as you can it to your drawings. 2) as easy as you can get, like a hako, not exactly like your drawings, but you still recognize it as the character.
I think you're doing something in between right now; you'r trying to keep the right proportions and everything, but with very simple shapes (understandably, since you're inexperienced). And simple shapes is great, but I think it would be better if you let go of the proportions too, and make it more "chibi". Because if you're limping on two thoughts, you might get the right proportions, but because the shapes aren't really close to the "real" ones, it will probably look very strange. Of course as always: if you're having fun trying stuff out, don't stop. And if you like the result, then stick with it. ;)
