After finishing the 1000 lucky stars, I want to begin a new project; A Senbazuru / Thousand Cranes.

Folding the cranes is no problem, however, I can't seem to find instructions on how to string them together to a chain.
(where to exactly pierce them with the needle, also, is it one string or more than one)
Another question would be; Do the cranes have to be the simple cranes or can it be the flapping bird too?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here some cranes

The simple and flapping crane are the same model. Pierce through the tip of the preliminary base (which ends up being the hump on the body).

the split before the last 2 steps. basically the same.

Thanks for the input so far, guys.
But there's a few question which keep bugging me:

Does it have to be one very long string with all the cranes on it or can it be multiple strings with let's say, 100 cranes each? (Pic as reference).
And, how long would the string need to be for either?
I know it would differ from case to case, but a rough estimation would be nice.

use multiple strings. it'll help u keep track and its easier to hang/store.

a chain of 1000 cranes would be fucking gigantic

I don't know what the situation where you live looks like, but I can easily obtain several thousand sheet of paper for a few €.
It's no origami paper of course, it's just these big noteblock things.
Bought two recently, one is 650 sheets 8 colors and one is 700 sheets 7 colors, both 2 €.
Look around for these. =)

and any tips for making it go faster?

This semi-off topic, but anyway, I just started making my 1000 lucky stars and was wondering what kind of paper other than the special strips is best.
My mother has lots of scrap-booking paper lying around that I've been using for it's pretty colors, but I've found that it's kind of heavy and hard for my tiny faggot hands to pinch together in the end. Do you think I'm just folding too many layers, or is there a better paper easily available that I should use?
I could always make the 40-minute trip to the asian supermarket to get the pretty special star paper, but I don't know when I'll have time. =[

@datura
wrapping paper worked fine. some glossy advertisment, too. but in the end i used used printerpaper because i could print on it whatever i want.

Dammit /po/, now I'm remembering Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes. Saddest book ever.
