am I the only one that thinks it would be totally awesome if the guy that made this used tin foil for the pins and actually put a 555 timer inside it? maybe wired it up to a very simple circut with a few other giant papercraft components?

normal paper would probably be too thick for the number of folds in it.

also, even if it were foil-backed, it's one continuous sheet of conductive foil.

You could use conductive paint to make a circuit on the paper. Add that with surface mount parts and you'd have yourself a techno-oragami thingy.
