So /po/eple,

if I understand correctly, you can rip N64 models quite easily using an emulator, is that correct?

If so, why doesn't somebody rip the model of Mario from Super Mario 64 or from Super Smash Brothers (whichever looks better) and create a template from it?

We have a few Mario papercratfs but they are really crappy, and the model should be easy to work with because of the low polygon count.

Most /po/eple that want to make papercrafts want to do it in two days. That is how long it takes to do what you describe: rip->pepakura->make crap.

Making good papercrafts can easily take over a month (usually does, with everyday life in between) even with low-poly models ripped from games/found on the internet.
I think many people who find out that even simple N64 models need work and realize that it will take more than two days give up.

A low polycount isn't the most important thing (of course less polygons normally means a simpler model, that is very true). What matters more, is the way those polygons are attached to each other to make the model: is this done in a smart papercraft way? When the model is ripped from a game, the answer is no.
The polycount can be over 10,000 it wouldn't matter, if it has been made in a smart way like sections and not just hollow like for example.

OP here. I didn't say I'm going to do it myself. In fact, I'm too busy to even try.

But maybe someone on /po/ who has more spare time on his hands could at least rip the model. Then maybe somebody else could simplify it and turn it into a cool template.

I just wanted to share this idea with you. It would be great to have such a template.

Don't worry, we got that lol...
This one actually is from the N64 and looks better than what any 2-day rip->pepakura->make crap /po/rson might come up with. ;)

Well, I can definitely see where your going, but you should be aware that Mario from SM64 is not just one model. SM64 being one of the first N64 games ever, they didn't really put the maximum effort into modeling. Mario is composed from uh, 16(?) different models put inside eachother. Mario's head is one, his body is 2 or 3, left and right hands maybe 6 and so on. Just look at him, you can clearly see where the legs seam.
The result in Pepakura or whatever would look like crap.

However, I don't know how SSB64 works. Be sure to try it out.

What about Super Smash Bros Melee, then?

If I got it right, Ninjatoe ripped the models for his adult Link papercrafts from that game, so I guess it would be possible to rip also Mario's model.

The polygon count would of course be highter, but if the end result can be comparable to Ninjatoes' Link... I say it's worth it.

Please can someone explane how to rip figures from games? When I know how to do I can try to rip Mario from Super Mario Galaxy.

Every game uses its own compression method to compress its models. So unless you find a program that will specifically rip or view models from a certain game, you're probably out of luck.

However, there are some programs that can rip stuff right out of DirectX as it runs. Which means that if you can see it, you can rip it.

Wait, I have a idea:
why to expect someone else to waste his time making something that I'm interested about? lets better ask them to do something completely new! why don't you guys do something that could be like 100,000 polygons large, because obviously you have more spare time than me, and even when I'm too busy to even try to do one of those 2 days papercrafts, you surely can spend your whole month...
what do you think about?
...
are you serious or are you just a well trained troll?

I didn't actually FORCE nobody into doing anything, right?

I'm a rather busy person (haven't been able to build a single model in the last two and a half months), and while I know other /po/eple are as busy as me, my guess is there are several others who have some spare time on their hands.

Moreover, I have absolutely NO experience in 3D modeling and even if I had the time to get into it, I would have problems ripping game models because I'm a linuxfag and most programs aren't available for my operating system.

What I did is suggest it may be a great idea to come up with a good-quality Mario papercraft. If nobody is willing/has enough spare time to do so, well, no problems on my side.
