See the pieces on the right? Stuff like that isn't going to fly. Especially since the piece is white, it makes it even harder to discern what piece goes where. Don't be afraid to optimize it and reshape it a bit. Sacrifice a bit of form for ease of construction. In b4 someone flips out and uses mizuirogakuen as an argument against this statement. A lot of his stuff is really optimized, and relies on the implied detail with textures rather than shaping everything.
There's a difference between messy pieces and difficult pieces. Difficult pieces are, well, difficult to make, but add a whole lot to the whole papercraft figure. Examples are like mizuirogakuen's individual finger pieces or the Feet on Howl's Moving Castle.
