Hey guys, I'm trying to build the Ironman mini arc reactor outta some poster board and some plastic sheets. only one problem, there arent any good refrence photos. any help would be appreciated, and I'll keep you updated on any progress.

Assuming from your chosen photo, you're building the prototype Arc Reactor that Tony built in the cave? I've got some photos for you...

Depth and scale reference (is that a pack of smokes next to it on the table?).

And some images of it being "worn".

holy shit dude, thanks! where did you find these?

Damn, I can't find an additional pic in my Iron Man folder of Stark in the cave, Reactor in chest, hooking it up to some parts...

Oh well, accept this desktop that gives you a clear, vectorized view of the sections as seen through his shirts.

Some are just floating online in various archives, but the first batch were taken by a guy I know in New York where Macy's had a window display of a shitload of Iron Man props, from the Arc display to the Mark 1 and even some goddamn stationary from Stark Industries.

I'm heavy into film props and costumes, and Iron Man's been my obsession of late.

yeah I'd like to build an actual replica but my unemployed budget limits me to paper. anyways, I was hoping to light it with some LEDs. waht do you guys think; One for each of the ten sections plus a center or a luxeon bright-ass-mo-fo in the center shining out through the surrounding sections?
>>147056
BTW: thanks for my new wallpaper.

Oh, I'm broke as fuck too, if I wasn't I'd have some plans or something to show you.

My thoughts on lighting (on the cheap) would just be to install a taplight inside, with an aluminum foil-lined bowl shape on the sides to direct some light through the sides.

If you're talking wearable, I've not a clue.

Oh, I've ideas on hiding electronics inside.

LOL! Surely you'll meet so much girls with that thing under your shirt!

well, if you gentlemen will excuse me, it's off to me engineering paper and compass I go. I shall return when I've completed my designs.

Oh yes, I'm sure your collection of Gundam paper models and wonderful command of the English language will have the ladies oozing in anticipation of your arrival.

BTW, this is the trick I always use!
'come in my room babe, I'll show you my collection of gundam papermodels' !!!
it works (sometimes...)!

The trick I always use is "Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?"

I'm making one using sheet aluminum and diffused plastic.
Eight mini LED's hid under the copper squares at the edges, the wires tucked around the edge, each powered by its own watch battery, like a giant throwy. So far the width is about 1/4 inch. Shouldn't be too heavy, I'll probably sew it into a shirt. Only prob I'm having now is how to switch them all on/off at the same time. Pics when it's done.

Dude who posted the pics here:

Forgot to mention that the estimated diameter of the reactor's face is between 4" and 4.5" according to the person who drafted the design for assembly, but that could have easily been adjusted before production. Still, always helpful to have more info.

bleagh! Why not make a slightly more complicated circuit like this? That way you can put a switch in series with the battery (just 1 battery, though it won't last as long as 8, though it's not as if LEDs suck that much power anyway) and switch them all at the same time.

whats is that thing on left ? autotransfomer?

Batteries/power switch.

<--- Just started the Arc Reactor... Obviously it's incomplete, but does /po/ have any bitching to do about the basic shapes already there?

lrn2 read circuit diagrams asshat, your battery must be running low

I normally build low-poly when doing things for Pepakura, but I want to use this model as a blueprint for building it in other materials, hence the high initial poly-count. It'll be cut down to something more manageable before I start texturing.

Anyway, got a bit further, feel free to critique.

Yeah, got some more work done.

Ignore the translucent outer ring, I was just playing with the file for rendering and thought it looked nifty.

I've got a roadblock when it comes to the back... there's pretty much zero reference out there aside from what I've already posted, where it's small, illuminated and blurry.

I can just add a simple backing and the outer ring (could work for a costume) in the meantime, unless anyone wants a full unit with wires.

Added some mock-up wires to the outer ring to get a better idea of the final product.

Also added a backing to the entire thing.

Thoughts/comments/critiques?

How do you guys think the outer ring should be built? Having a complete ring with separate blocks means the blocks could be out of alignment, having the blocks the same piece as the ring could pose problems with lighting, etc..

I haven't built many models myself personally, so any ideas are welcome and appreciated.
>> Gen
In terms of the outer ring, i think that you are in a bit of a pickle because of the nature of the materials you want to use. If you use paper or card, colour it first before you attach to project, and go with the "straight piece of paper with circular guide" approach.

Your project seems to be coming along quite nicely, but i would advise against gluing the individual pieces together, as this WOULD cause lighting problems, not the by having them the same. If you want to have lighting, try keeping the density to a minimum to have the radiance as bright as possible.
I can't tell you much more, but good luck.

I'm not the OP, I haven't decided on materials yet. Thanks for the advice, though.

For future reference, I, the one building the Arc Reactor on my computer, am the one who posted the reference pics earlier.

I'm going to try and dig around for some more info in the meantime, hopefully I can uncover something on the back end of the unit.

/po/ built this in a cave with a box of paperscraps
>> Anonymous
Optimized it a bit. Chopped out the sides of the outer ring boxes AND the bits of the ring that go underneath them... a couple of well placed tabs can connect then, and should anyone wish it, the boxes could house the LEDs illuminating the ring.

Here's the 3DS in case anyone wants to fuck around with it:

Just letting you guys know, I think I'm done with the model. I tried to import it into Pepakura but that piece of shit program refuses to play nice, so I'm gonna try to figure something else out.
>> Anonymous
i tried the 3DS image posted on pepakura too. all the numbers are scruntched up and had to know what goes where. btw? anyone know what programs to use to make something into a 3DS. i found found alot of angles of the top part of the iron man suit from the movie
>> Anonymous
>>148261

You're not making any sense, dude.

You're talking about a 3ds file, then numbers, then a format converter, and finally the suit itself, which has nothing to do with this project.

bimp you batches

Anon working on the model, here.

Lighting problems = solved!

White off/blue on EL sheet w/ inverter for $10, supplement with LEDs for the desired effect. Just use this as the backing and you're set.
