Hay /po/eple,

I wonder if anyone has a template for Dragoon Luneth from Final Fantasy III on the DS?

Any similar or related template also wins.

Do you think it would be possible to extract the 3D model from a ROM dump and create a papercraft starting from it?

If we found a way to do this, and someone with enough know-how/willingness/free time, we could create also great papercrafts like a Fat Chocobo one.

FF9 Vivi from http://www.freewebs.com/chamoo_papercrafts/index.htm looks a lot like the 8bit Black Mage (well, the hat and coat, not the pants...)
Somebody repainted it to make it look even more like it (save pic as jpeg then rename to .rar/open with Winrar)

That's how many /po/ papercrafts were made: from ripped game models.
But you have to find special programs to rip the models: every game developer uses a different method to compress and store the data on the game disc/cartridge, so for different games, you need different programs.
Although for older games many such programs exist, I don't think people understand the working of the NDS enough yet to do stuff like this yet for DS games.

want so bad...

but some of the best models by chamoo or urashiman were not rip but remade models.

Maybe it's possibile to rip the model, and then tweak it for better result as a papercraft?
Dunno, I'm totally a 3D modeling noob.

I would totally love to build such models, anyway. If you need me, I'll be right here, still hoping...

I found a really interesting project related to NDS roms ripping, it's still in the early stages of development but looks promising.

Lol ... I never ripped a model.

Not saying that's a bad thing, not saying that it's not a bad thing, just saying that it is so. ;)

If you do use a ripped game model, tweaking it before using it in Pepakura is not only possible, it's mandatory or else the papercraft will most likely not turn out very good...

You can use a model ripped from a game as a starting point, or from Google 3D Warehouse, Turbosquid, or from one of the countless other places on the interwebs, or you can make one from scratch, or you can use special software for making standard characters recognizable as game characters, there are countless of ways.
And I think they're all fine. In the end, it doesn't really matter what you start of with, they can all be used in Pepakura to get great results, as long as you don't skip the preperation.

There is a difference between 3D models that are used for Games or render sequences and 3D model designed to be a Papercraft. Gamemodel can be build in you favourite 3D soft from one model and poly are allowed to overlap. Papercraft 3Dmodels must be seperated in different pieces and nothing iss allowed to overlap. So doing them from scratch is mostly easier then editing an existing ripped model. The only cool thing from ripped models are the textures because you don't need to draw your on ones -> else 15000Hours MSPaint!

No kidding... That's why you shouldn't skip the preperation before you open them up in Pepakura. ;)
Making 3D models from scratch: you can keep in mind that you're making them for papercraft, but you need to make it from scratch.
Getting 3D models elsewhere to start with: you don't have to build it from scratch, but you most likely have to fix them (prepare them for Pepakura).
There are pros and cons for everything.

>>90008The only cool thing from ripped models are the textures
The only cool thing lol not really... The actual game models are "quite nice" models that can be modified so all those problems you mention aren't an issue anymore. Making the models from scratch isn't automatically better.

Ripped model should look closer to the in-game characters... But if you are a good 3D modeler, you can get good-looking models also starting from scratch.

I'm not going to have access to Maya for another week, so all I've got right now is Rhino3D, which is a CAD program, and doesn't use skeletal structures.

Does BMDViewer rip models with rigging intact? Anyone know?

I don't know if it does that, but it also lets you open the animations for those 3D models and play them to the desired pose then export the model in that pose.

Oh shit.

Turns out Autodesk has a free personal learning addition. Fuckwin.

Double shit.

Maya doesn't support that filetype.
