Daft Punk Helmet Anonymous
/po/ i'm working on a model for a papercraft guy-man helmet (short dude from daft punk) but that pepakura crap is aggravating and won't let me save. not to mention not letting me resize the fucking thing. my test print looks about big enough for an fucking figurine.

can anybody offer any help for getting this thing printer ready?
>> Anonymous
Oh, and this is the Human After All/Electroma version. I didn't think the Discovery version's lights would work well in paper form. If this works I'll end up doing Thomas' helmet as well (the silver guy), and kinda unrelated, I've also started modeling the Burger King, the huge version in the commercials where you look out of the teeth.

>> Anonymous
Hot damn, OP if it isn't too much to ask could you possibley make a blank version for customizational reasons?
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>127191

Thinking of adding the lights from the Discovery version? No problem, the colors on the preview pics are from the models themselves, not the mapping. I still need to add some extra details with the maps, including the wiring on Guy-Man's back, some circuitry detail below the "ears" and just some glossiness and reflections. Thomas will need the mouth slit, vertical dome sep at the top of his head and machined rings before his "headphones" give into the bevel. A "blank" version may look a little bare.

I pulled the model apart before throwing it into pepakura, and while the dome fared well, the gold bits look like crap and I still can't save or export the file.

Does anyone have the full version of pepakura?
>> Anonymous
yaaaa sum1 is succeeding where i failed >>
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
Alrighty folks, papermodel test version number 1.

I tweaked the pepakura folds and came out with this. I did a bit of light photoshopping, but stopped because I don't want to put in an hour of PS only to find the damn thing doesn't fold properly. Use the previous screen shots of pepakura as a folding guide wherever I covered up the folds, and keep in mind that not every line is supposed to be a fold. Classic 3d modeling uses triangles to build up objects, and pepakura doesn't interpret these properly.

I'm currently assembling a tiny one-sheet version, but this thing is so detailed I don't think it'll work. I meant this to be full-scale, not 2-inches high.

If anyone attempts this, please post some shots. One person every 18 hours saying "hey, nifty" isn't giving me the inspiration to put more hours into this.

OP here

I've been busy, but I should get started working on these things pretty soon. If anyone can link me to a tutorial on adding texture maps to .pdo files, it'd be much appreciated as my Google searches have been fruitless.

Also, the Burger King has also been progressing nicely, should have some preview pics by the end of the week.

>> Anonymous
>>127701

Thanks. After I get the basic shape down I'll be splitting it into separate parts to make folding easier. The upper lip will be a separation, so more detail can go into the teeth without making folding damn near impossible, and of course the crown will be separate.

Someone earlier requested that when I release the final files for Guy-Man and Thomas to include mapless (or at least monochromatic map) versions for customization... are there any other requests for alternate versions or specific details they want included?

I've been toying with the idea of separating Thomas' head vertically, like the actual helmet. I just want to avoid having to make a version 2.0 of any of these later on down the road.

OP here, sorry about the delay folks, I've been extremely busy and haven't had a chance to work on these. Like I said earlier, there's no real texture file for these yet, I needed a texturing tutorial before I could whip them up.

As far as "real" helmets are concerned, none are available. There are a few fan made versions, but they're not for sale. The concerns about the lighting, however, only applies to the Discovery version from '97. With the release of Human After All in '05 Daft Punk opted for newer helmets, with no electronics. It is these versions which are used in the videos for that album, are currently used in concert and in their film Electroma. There were a few dozen softer-detailed vacuum-formed background helmets made for that film, but they were kept under tight guard and all were accounted for at the end of production.

The texture maps are simple enough for these guys. Guy-Man is gold, with a black front dome. The outer face of the rounded disc in his "ear" is black, the center cylinder underneath that is silver, the one facing forward is green, the one facing back is red, and the additional "dome" on the back of the head is covered with vertically running wires, primarily white interspersed with red and green and occasionally intertwining.

Sorry for not having a real update, but life has been kicking my ass.

Dear /po/

Regarding this thread, why was this topic so epic when there was nobody actually doing it? Now, we have this awesome win of a person putting the gears in motion, but there is absolutely NO interest anymore. I mean, come on, it's ACTUALLY going to happen. These helmets could be so EPIC WIN if it's pulled off. Come on, /po/, I'm sure there are some designers here that would want to make their mark on something we've all pretty much asked for since last year. Let's get it together, /po/.

For anyone still having troubles with these models in Pep, I'm working on the Thomas one right now. I have a good bit of experience working in Pep (building 2 full size Halo armor sets, and a full sized Sonic head) and I'll up the completed, unfolded and somewhat scaled file in a few when I finish it.
>> 4ng31 !!f6UHP2wLT8+
http://rapidshare.com/files/102836441/thomas.pdo.html

Height - 26cm
Width - 28.6
Depth - 44cm

Depth kind of worries me, but the other measurements seem right, or close to it...you might want to scale down by 10% or more.
>> Anonymous
Op here. New employment cut back my work time for these guys, but I see someone else has managed to make at least one of these usable.

For modeling, I'm poor, so I made them (vertice by vertice and extruding) in OpenFX, then exported to 3ds for use in pdo.

Don't know if I've already uploaded this or not (too lazy to check) but here's Thomas's pdo file.

http://rapidshare.com/files/102916975/thomas.pdo.html

All silver, with a black visor. There's a few minor details, but nothing major aside from black slot for the mouth. which I have not added yet (it was to be part of the texture map)

I obviously haven't worked on the scale or how the parts should separate yet really.

Here's to hoping this gets done for real this time!

I'm also trying the file Anh1l1at1on uploaded. I emptied my ink cartridge printing it, so I hope it works.

Oh, I'm the op, by the way. It'll be easier to make sense of the thread if I'm a namefag.
>> 4ng31 !!f6UHP2wLT8+
Do you guys ever try using fiberglass and body fillers to make these things smooth and actually wearable? It's the path I'm planning on taking with the one I'm currently building. I'll have pics of the test build up tomorrow of the pep file I posted a few posts back.
>> 20xx
>>133150

Possible. It'd have to be a much more detailed file however, and the smaller details, such as the ears and LEDs will have to be real or scratch built instead of being used from the paper model. Also, considering the amount of effort put into fiberglassing and smoothing with bondo you'll be doing, you might be better off just using it as a scale reference and sculpting the helmet itself, molding and then casting from that.

While heated and curved acrylic can be used for Thomas' helmet, Guy-man's will require a vacuum-formed dome in clear plastic that'd have to be sent in for tinting due to the shape.

Not to mention that currently available chrome paints don't hold up under wear and tear, so they would have to be sent in for proper plating. You could do it at home, but that would run in the hundreds.

There's a reason there aren't any helmets available.
>> 4ng31 !!f6UHP2wLT8+
>>133152

Well, I've made full Halo armor sets from Pep before, so I know a thing or 2 about doing it. Technically, using a paper (card stock) base for something like this is much easier than sculpting one from foam...technically, they're both the same process.

As for chrome paint, House of Kolor makes a very nice, but very expensive paint.

And yeah, the Guy visor is going to have to be vacuum formed, but again, all you really need is a stove and a home built table with pre-tinted acylic to do it.

Nothing to serious, but again, nothing that's commonly found in normal homes...lol.
>> 20xx
     File :-(, x)
>>133155

I primarily sculpt in oil clay, so I wouldn't know much about carving and shaving hard foam, but I do know you'd need a very refined buck for vacuumforming if you wanted optical clarity with Guy-Man's dome, and that most homemade vac-tables wouldn't do the job.

<---Then you get into the electronics for the Discovery version of Guy-Man's helm, in addition to the different sculpt...

btw look great :D
just trollin for a feedback here, how hard would you say that was to assemble, 1-10?
>> Anonymous
5, simply because half-assing one part warped everything that touched it, so one side is straight and the other rippled enough to make the ear not stick on all the way, but that's all my fault. Working on such a large, hollow object is just weird.

The leds were too complex for their size but it looks slick without them. I wanna run some real wires across the back and stretch some tights across the visor, but I don't know if it'd support that much.
>> Anh1l1at1on
>>134599
it might if you use some clearcoating first
and agreed on the LEDs. i dont think i layed those out well an dif if so it still would have been difficult.
ty for feedback :D

Hey, what scale did you end up using for that helm (or at least, height wise)?

Also, 20 and An, wanted to thank both you guys for actually doing this...I spread the pep files out on some forums (as I knwo you've both seen already...lol).

But again, big thanks for this!
>> Anh1l1at1on
>>135021
your welcome :D

as far as the scale is concerened, it works fine with 8 1/2 by 11 and most likely would with A4, but i dunt know.
im quite sure it will work if you just print out the .pdo and let pepa automaticly scale the template to fit your paper (if needed)

>>135021

Just let pepakura scale it to 8.5x11, fits my (small) head just fine.
