Okay, time for some Original Content to combat this rise of the /b/itch once more.

I've been pondering since yesterday afternoon what I should make as my first real release.
I was thinking the G36 or the HK417, but those things would turn into one helluva tough build, especially with my tendency to overdetail.
So I kept thinking.. Wanted to build a Flak 88(Fave cannon of all time) but the thing has so many tiny flimsical cylindershapes it wouldn't be godly possible to make. Schwerer Gustav(can you already tell I have a parttime job as a /k/ommando) was doable, but yet again the Black Lazy struck as I was figuring out what to do with all the rails(ya know, the the things you hold to make sure you don't fall to almost certain death) and that project was abandoned as well(for now).

Ponder ponder, ponder ponder. How about a hat? I've got a bowler that needs simplifying(unless you want to work on a nigh-perfect half sphere), a top hat that was done, but I just discovered the brim is messed up(split in to too many parts) and I've got a trilby and/or a fedora on the waiting list.

Does /po/ want headwear other than masks?

Okay, cleaned up the Top hat, but I have run into a bump. It's not hard to make, 25 faces on the side, but one of the sides has gotten separated, as you can see. Any solutions?
Also don't mind me using IE instead of Firefox, Firefox is slow as hell on this laptop.

Either your flat surfaces aren't really flat (causing pieces to overlap and Pepakura snipped them out), or you just need to separate the pieces on that lone section and reattach them where you want.... Bloody hell, that made no sense, I'll MSPaint you a picture.
>> SageRGrate
Well, I've tried that, but it won't let me, and I can't even think of any way that that particular segment could've gotten unflattened....
Well... Unless.... Okay enough periods now, I did this:
I made a circle->extruded it upwards for the main body->Extrude top ring by 0, merge vertices at center->extrude bottom ring by 0, scale bigger.

This is my second time using Blender and Pepakura in unison, so I'm a bit flabbergasted.
>> Octo
Wow, I can't believe I actually overlooked this.... You have ze red lines of doomz!!!

Go back into Blender, choose Vertex selection and uncheck Occlude Background Geometry. All along those red lines, make sure the vertexes aren't doubled up (have to manually do it, Remove Doubles won't work)

It might take a little time to find the right lines, as your hat is basically a revolved surface that looks the same all the way around...

I'm going bald. I've checked everywhere and I can't find a bloody double or anything.

I just rebuilt the entire thing from scratch using the EXACT same method, and guess what? I just got MOAR red lines. 5 of those strips.

Metasequoia any good, lol?
>> Octo
If you wanna rapidshare it I can look at it...

From what I hear, Meta is good if you're just going to use it for papercrafting. I chose Blender because....well I don't know why. But now that I use it, it seems like a waste to relearn everything in Metasequioa...

True dat holmes.

I chose Blender back then because I didn't like 3DS Max and redownloading Maya seemed like a major PITA. It's great for modeling, dunno about texturing, never got that far(Black Lazy always struck right when the model was finished).

I'll give it one more rebuild, and if it happens again, I'll rapidshit.
>> SageRGrate
Holy...?!

IT'S GETTING WORSE

Fine. Master Octo, please have a look at it and tell me why Blender hates me, a fellow Dutchman, so bloody much.

Here you are sir....

I think you just needed to recalculate the normals, all your vertexes were fine.

>>183751
Dang. Thanks. Owe ya one.

Onto the Bowler then.
>> Octo
Not really. On my Airman model, some kind Anon helped me when I was ready to give up. Just the gentle nature of /po/opers I suppose =p

It probably also helps that papercraft and origami both require problem-solving skills, so anyone doing this as a hobby actually enjoys solving problems. It's a game, and if you get it right, people congratulate you.

Plus, there's always that added benefit that if one does help bring a project to completion, then everyone gets the prize. It's like all of those mini-games in RPG videogames.

I find it hilarious that the name for /po/ that stuck was /po/opers.

>>183605
You're a /k/ommando? Neat! We've been needing someone who is willing to model guns and weaponry. Kamikuzu's guns are nice, but tedious. I haven't even tried to build one because of all the problems people tend to have while building them. Even if you only build one weapon that can be built easily, that will hopefully jumpstart another section of possibilties here on /po/.
>> SageRGrate
>>183816
Yeah, well, parttime. And I used to have some pretty decent models of guns, but formatting made me lose them and they would've been fuckhard to build anyhow.

I'll look into crafting another one, as I said, G36 and HK417 are probably not happening, but I might look into a FAMAS if anyone's interested, don't think it even be that hard to build.

>>183605
This is cool. You should make Slash's top hat. (you know Slash, the guy from Guns and Roses?)
>> SageRGrate
>>183887
Pfeh, do I know Slash? I worship the bloody land he walks on!

He is seriously the only dude on the planet I would allow to smoke if I ever ruled the world.
He just looks so fucking badass doing it with his LP.

On his hat: I was actually thinking of making it, but seeing as texturing and me are not anywhere near close friends, I decided to make this one first, besides, Slash's top hat has more of an hourglass shape, so it'd be harder to build as well.

I'll see if I can make a FAMAS first, and continue on it later. Also the other hats have been cancelled for now; The Bowler was ready but nigh-unfoldable, and a Trilby or a Fedora would just be impossible at my level of skill at building due to shapes and dents.

Can I have this Tophat in .PDF?
Thanks.

Well well lookie lookie. What have we here? Looks like a... big block with some strange deformities?
Ah damn, filename. Ah well, was gonna tell you anyway. I've gotten this far now, but what worries me now is getting all the 3D things done later. I started with Bezier Curves but soon realized I couldn't do any indents on that, well, not easily enough, so I just started rebuilding it out of a cube.

>>183901
Sure thing, it didn't come out perfectly straight but it doesn't interfere with buildability.

Thnak you very much. This is a nice hat indeed.

And good luck with this gun. It is a gun, right? Looks like an assault rifle.

I want a TMP or P90.... or better yet, why not the ultimate gun? Make the Angel Arms!

also, yay, finally back on the net after my computer died -_-

I worked with these guys a while back. It's not papercraft, but all the skills are the same when you're using styrofoam, duct tape, and posterboard.
>> SageRGrate
Okay, com/po/dres, quick question:
Should I make it a bit low-poly? I'm currently working on the smooth, soft and very round-thus-polygon-intensive handle and just realized that it'll probably be unbuildable for the Average /po/e out there due to the shape and levels. If I keep it more square, it'll be buildable(and easier to model, but that doesn't really matter.)

It's already turning out to be low-detail because the FAMAS has a lot of nitpicking details such as a slight hole here, minor bump there, that kinda stuff. The rough shape is coming along nicely, I might add, I'm halfway through the handle and then when I make the trigger that part's completed as well.
>> SageRGrate
Okay I'm commencing some savebumps, shamelessly starting with my own thread.

Fucking 8yr olds. Moot, get us a motherfarking moderator!

I've just unfolded the test version for the first time, and this is the result.
The model is, well, the model, and the template is the pretty much 1/1 scale version of the handle.
