Manual unfolding? Anonymous
When I do an unfold of my model in pepakura, it's needlessly complicated. Is there a way I can I can decide what's connected to what when I unfold?
>> Xydirus
yup.
actually, the "unfold button" only transforms the model into 2D, you have to do the "manual unfolding" or it'll never be foldable just using the "unfold" button, at least is a cube or a pyramid...
anyway, I've unfolded a fairly good number of papercrafts, so I can help you:
you see the buttons at the right of the "mouse with the rectangle" button?
hover the mouse over them.
one of them (the zipper one) is to decide where will the polygons be toghether or not, the "two lines, three points" one is used to rotate/move a piece. if you drag a pìece you will... uh, drag it (duh) but if you click a circle and then drag over another part of the page you'll rotate around that point.
and finally, the one with the blue trapezoid and the green line is to decide wich side you want to move the flaps... once you learn how to use those 3 buttons everything else is pretty straightforward...
only one thing else: the button at the left, the "non centric square" (second row, at the very left) is useful to change the size of the model...
feel free to ask anything else and I'll try to answer ASAP
good luck with that.

Ah, so it's very manual, then.
I just tried out the join/disjoin tool...I can't seem to join stuff unless I've already unjoined them. Do I just have to line stuff up as close as I can so it looks like it's right when it prints, or is there a trick to that tool?

Awesome! Mega Man Legends models. <3

well, looking at the model I can tell you where's the problem
look, in my experience, there are some modeling programs that model the 3d objects, BUT somehow, they don't export the faces as "joined" faces... that problem is showed in pepakura designer with the big red lines.
most of the pepakura files you'll find wont have such lines ('cause there are no open edges) but there will be programs that will present this problem, making it imposible for you to join them in the page...
the solution?
try to export the model with a diferent program, prefereably one that doesnt have that problem (duh) in my experience I've only used sketchup, and it worked terribly with pepakura (almost every edge was left open) or in case you can't use any other program to export the model to pepakura, then use the button that locates the faces from 2D to 3D and vice-versa, and use it to find wich faces should go togheter, and with the "three circles two lines" button join them manually, first make two circles be joined, then rotate around the first one... if you do not want to do this with every single part that was left open, just select the flaps button, and with the contextual menu (the one that opens with the secondary click of the mouse) add flaps were needed... you could try to find a way to join the faces to eliminate the red lines directly in pepakura designer, but at least I can't...

So it sees each of those red lines as a gap? craaaaaaaap. well, atleast that explains a bit.
Sketchup is the only thing I have right now, but it's gotten a lot better since I switched from exporting as .3ds to .obj. Also, I'm now reducing everything to faces only and grouping them myself to make it easier to work with. Hopefully it'll help.
Thank's for the "check corresponding face" tip...The gesselschaft was getting really confusing not knowing what was what.

your wellcome, and thanks for the info about the exporting format, actually the only format I've exported from sketchup is the google earth 4, and that format worked as shit...
did you use other program to export in that other format or sketchup did it? i formated my computer some weeks ago and I haven't installed sketchup yet, so I don't remember in what formats did it export
>> Anonymous
Yeah, sketchup's the only thing I can use right now for modeling. It'll export as 3ds, obj, kmz, xsi, and a few others. But pepakura can only read 3 of the formats sketchup can export. (3ds, obj, and, I think kmz)
Also, breaking up the model into smaller parts and opening them separately in pd has helped tremendously.
