Have at it. And it's not optimized. I just unwrapped it and then uploaded it.

Unfortunately, optimizing it is the most important step.
Just unwrapping it as it is will usually mean that the template will "not be fun to build". ;)
If you wanted to motivate something else to do a better job because you'd like to build one yourself, you'd be better off posting the 3D model so /po/eple might try and simplify and fix it (though posting the 3D model does not automatically mean someone will start working on it of course...!)

truth.....

Whew... all right, all right... I'll go work on optimization...

looking forward to the finished model.
>> Amukunau
Oh gawd... it has become painfully apparent that my optimization skill DOES NOT EXIST!

Just upload the .pdo and I'll see what I can do for it.

Fixed for optimalization starts with fixing and simplifying the 3D model BEFORE you even start up Pepakura. Many /po/eple forget this, while it's the most important step.

Ah, whoops. I thought the 3D model was already good to go, he just sucked at dividing the parts.

Still, I can simplify the 3D model as well, so if that can be uploaded, I can see what I can do.

Within thither lies the .3ds format of the model. Tell me if you need it in .obj.

I guess I did go a little wee bit high poly... I just thought I'd try papercrafting out.

I'd love it in .obj if you wouldn't mind.

.obj file coming right up!

Working on it right now.

I simplified nearly all of it.

I say nearly because:

A) Like with most FF models, there's always head behind the hair. I couldn't/don't know how to reach those, so if they are there, then they are unsimplified.

B) There were two faces I couldn't simplify without completely screwing up the model. One was on the right arm, and one on the left side of the head.

How do you simplify models?

I use the Wire tool in Metasequoia.

How do you open the mqo file...?

"Simplifying" a 3D model for papercraft is much more than just reducing its polygon count...
It's using your head to already mentally unwrap the model to see where problems might occur that ask for a total re-design of (some part(s) of) the 3D model, not just making two triangles into one rectangle; that's not even that much of a problem, it only gets rid of lines you don't need to score and fold, it doesn't determine the buildability of the model (but you should do it anyway (now or in Pepakura Designer), because it means less work when you build it).

This looks like a fairly simple model, not too complex, but some good decisions still need to be made: there are two layers of clothing, you can either hope "draping" them on top of one other will work out (a testbuild will reveal this for sure) or you can re-design them to get less parts (since most of it is useless in paper form anyway, you won't really see it but you would have to build it...). Also the hat looks a little like a loose fit (again, a testbuild will reveal this).
And personally, I'd try a different way to attach the legs to the body, this way will be difficult to get just right (you won't make it all perfect the legs, and the legs might be uneven)

Hiding parts in Metasequoia: select them, then CTRL+H and CTRL+G to see them again.
But the best is to cut+paste them to a new object. Be sure you have the right object selected when you work on it or you'll get red lines in Pepakura!!

Well, just tell me when you need the texture file. Or better yet, send me the optimized file in .obj form, please. I couldn't open the .mqo file in Max.

Thanks for the detailed explanation and picture! I understand how it works now, but need to practice more with 3d models.
