Portal Gun Papercraft Anonymous
Okay folks, here's the deal. A while back, before all this DDos and DNS mess, we were making a Portal Gun. The sad thing is, the original thread was lost amongst the chaos. Luckily, I happened to save just about everything there was in it. In this rar you will find everything BUT the finished product. See, it's still in PDO format, and I am not skillful enough to unfold it, fix it, and make it viable.

And this I turn to you my fellow /po/-ians(Couldn't think of a good name). Shall we finish this and make the greatest papercraft to date?

You can't edit the .pdo files in the way you're asking. You need an .obj or similar 3D file in order to be able to import them into a modeling program. Pepakura can only be used to unfold a 3D model, you can't edit what's already there. There IS an .obj file floating around somewhere....

we need someone who can work with 3d models in something like maya or metasequoia or sketchup, the model itself needs to be optimised.

I'm going to learn how to after uni finished this year.

If someone posts the obj. file I'll work on it. I aint got shit to do today.

Okay it's not too bad, this is about 10 minutes worth of work. Should have this ready to unfold in a few days.

muuuuch better. Anybody want to start the unfold or wait till its completely done?

Maybe it is a good idea to make the ends completely closed.
Right now, if I understand correctly, the "barrel" needs to be glued to the holes. So now you would have to use valley folds, which is a difficult method like this.
If you just close the hole, you can just make the "barrel" a closed cylinder with top and bottom too, and glue the bottom of the barrel to this main body without problems, and it will even act as a strengthening rib structure.
Try not to think of a 3D model for papercraft purposes as a hollow shell, but as a collection of parts: you already need to know how you want to build it and thus how you want to unfold it. If you only start thinking about that when you get to Pepakura, you will be too late, and most people don't have the enthusiasm to go back a few steps to the 3D model, so try to prevent that. ;)

>>170107

okay, the part you point to at the top is a part that is attached to the model after an auto unfold so the part wasn't moved to where the best spot for it would be(probably should have mentioned that)

And the second part you point to doesn't matter if it has a face in the 3d model or not because when you unfold and lay it on paper the face is there due to the paper surface(hopefully that makes sense)

thanks for the tips and keep em coming so we can get this right.

I am seperating the parts to be unfolded seperately to ease the unfolding process, then they will be merged together.

sorry if i'm posting too much here, but I posted that pic just to show that it's unfolding better. That pic was an auto unfold as well as the pic i attached to this post which is before editing.

Hmm, I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS. (now do one that is life-sized/1:1 scale)
>> Anonymous
>>170222

thats what i'm unsure of. what size is 1:1?
>> Anonymous
>>170224
That is the size that the model would be if the gun were real. As for exact measurements, I would build the gun as big as possible, and see how big that is. Then adjust accordingly untill you get the right size. Scaling the model is always a pain, but you don't have to get it to 1:1. You could just release an unlocked pdo and let people build it as big as they want. (That is usually the best option.)

     File :-(, x)
Alright /po/ didn't take me a couple days like I thought. There is a black and white version and a color version with the arperture labs logo, the logo is applied as an image in the 2d pattern so if you resize the model you have to resize the image as well. Hope you guys build this. Time to move on to Big Daddy!

That IS the beauty of holes on templates: if you don't want there to be a hole, there won't be on the paper; but I think it would be prudent to put a note about it on the template, because most /po/eple will see it as something that needs to be cut out I think. (it's the same thing with how you will attach the hinges for the arms: it would be easier to remove the holes I think, especially because now sometimes the hole will be split in half so you can't tell it's not supposed to be a hole anymore).
And I don't know if the Portal modelers got lazy, but the middle part seems unfinished? the inside of the "cradle" that holds the barrel isn't there. It's a part you probably don't see much in the game, and because in the game, the backside of the polygons will be black too, you don't notice it, but in paper, it will be white. Unless you print it on colored cardstock.
(there is a text option in Pepakura, you can use it to add notes, I think since this has many things that are "a bit different" than your usual template, it would be worth it to put your notes and thoughts about it on the template)
There are a lot of things you can easily overlook, especially if you only spent one afternoon on it yet. If you look at it again after not thinking about it for a while, you might start seeing things you got an idea for to do it differently. Good luck!
>> Anonymous
>>170294

thanks for all the tips. Now don't take this the wrong way, but you could have easily fixed those things in the pdo you pointed out. I didn't design this(i know you know that) but alot of people have been requesting a buildable version for awhile now and it's not something I wanted to spend days on. Just trying to help out my fellow /po/opers ya gotta admit though it's much better than it was and now somebody else can take over. I'll post the skp. file if anybody wants it
>> tl;dr Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>170325
Some things can be fixed in Pepakura, some things can't. Parts that are not in the 3D model, are not in the PDO file. The inside of the "cradle" underneath the barrel can not be made to appear in Pepakura if it's not in the 3D model.
Like you said: you can "cheat" a bit if a hole is inside a surface, but not when it's on the edge: you need a line there (only if you want to get rid of the hole of course)
Of course it's okay if you don't want to work on it anymore, but if you only wanted to work on it for an afternoon and then let somebody else continue your work, then you should have concentrated on the SketchUp file: you can't "update" an existing Pepakura file with a fixed 3D model, you need to make an entirely new one...
If the 3D model is fixed so that all the parts can be made in paper (which you already need to do in your head a couple of times), then you can easily unfold it in one afternoon in Pepakura. But you can't really go back and forth, unfortunately (maybe they'll implement an update feature in Pepakura someday, so you can only update the 3D model you fixed without loosing all your Pepakura work - it's also useful to make seperate Pepakura files so you don't loose all your work if you only need to fix one small part).
I didn't check everything of course, these are just things I immediately noticed, which I wouldn't have if you hadn't did the work you did. Hopefully somebody can use the things in this thread to their advantage and work on it (the SketchUp file, not the Pepakura file!!!!! lol)
And if nobody does, you can always kinda scratchbuild it with this as guideline, fixing things as you build it.
>> Anonymous
>>170335
Your right, thanks for the kick in the ass. Actually there is a way to update the model without losing your work, what I do is update the part you need in 3d model, then export only that part as a kmz file, then import that into pepakura and replace your files by moving the old parts off screen. It increases the file size though. I attached a link to the sketchup file and an updated pdo version with the missing part you pointed out added in.

>>170344
That's a useful workaround if you already did a lot of work on the Pepakura file, and then find out the last part you get to work on, has a flaw in it you didn't notice before (it's always the last part...)

Okay, awesome. Looks like you guys took it 95% of the way there.

But would it be at all possible to get a PDF of the final version? I don't have enough skill to operate that PDO. Anyone feel up to it?

Either way thanks to everyone who put effort into this.

Isn't there supposed to be a handle there in the hole? O_o also where the logo is, how come its only on one side...is it like that? (portal doesnt want to start up for some reason so I cant check for myself D:)
>> Anonymous
why is it the portal gun has to be like a fucking labyrinth? i've been wanting to make one for months but there's always something wrong with the next one and the next one.
>> Anonymous
>>171013
there was a handle. I removed it cause I edited it to be a papermodel not a 1:1 replica. The 3d model file was in the rar file you could always model one yourself. From the pics I had the logo was only on one side, it's something I added so you dont have to use it if you don't want it. This one is buildable, just depends on your skills, I have started building this one and will post a pic if interested.

the logo is on the right side in your picture like it is in the model, and you can use any kind of round tube for hoses
