what kind of paper/card would you recommend for an amateur folder? I'm looking to build that Rex model (I figure jump in head first), but I wanna know what kind of paper would be best for me? I figure regular printer paper is out of the question..

Copypasta?

Saging, but answering - regular printer paper is AOK if you're careful, and for beginners, it's a good starting point; when you switch to card, you have to worry about white edging on fold lines and seams.

And for pete's sake, don't come crying to us if your Rex falls apart because you decided to start with a hard model.

also, any special glue/supplies I should look into?

Keep in mind, this probably isn't something I plan on making a main hobby, just something to do every so often :) ty

No. Never jump in head first. This is what everyone does.

1) Holy shit that model is awesome I gotta make it! Who cares if I've never done this before, if I'm only going to make one model, that one is going to be it!

2) This is kinda hard, I'm not sure how to put a lot of this stuff together. I'll just go do some other easier models and try this one again when I'm more experienced

3) Goddammit I'm on my deathbed at the ripe old age of 85 and I never got around to doing that model FUCK

And then you will die with a regret. So do easier shit first.

Regular paper is fine for beginners and simple models. Don't ever use regular for complex models such as stuff that would have to balance itself such as people because regular paper is extremely lightweight and will be knocked over every time you walk by. Boxes are good paper models to start with.

yeah, you offer up a very good point.

However, I am kinda looking for things a little more relative to my interests. Something I actually wouldn't mind displaying. like.. maybe the snake-in-a-box one? (I could always glue the feet to a "base")

Or something like that? or would you say thats still too complicated? Keep in mind, I'm not a total retard, and I am pretty good with my hands. I've built a few gundam models (not saying thats at all similar, but i hope you get where i'm going with this) and I am not too shabby of an artist (not great, but decent)

So.. I can handle .. well. my hands. hehe. But You're right. I think I'll start out with some beginner level stuff.

Thank you :) And about that glue? and should i use like.. a toothpick, or some other type of applicator for the glue? rather than the clumbsy nozzle?

or be like me. Go to art-school, find you're crap at most things but you can assemble card-board like a crazy-thing, end up making a life-size model of a set of TEU container doors out of double-layered cardboard.

Matte photopaper. Expensive but good at cutting clean.

Also, start simple. Very simple. Like gluing a box together.

wait.. a Box, or a Cube?

Do you mean a box, like a box with a lid? or a box, like... a cube.. like a dice/companion cube?

Dont jump right in? Are you fucking kidding me? This was the first model I ever made, and I think it turned out pretty well.

holy shit

I thought it was a ghost.

My printer was low on ink, so its a little... colorless... to be honest, I didn't expect to be able to finish it anyway, so I didn't bother to reprint it when I got the new ink

the face or lack of it scares me ;____;

Well, so far so good. I made the hellraiser cube. Turned out pretty well, and it only took me about 10 minutes.

Lessons learned: don't use the tip of the scissors on corners

DON'T USE ELMERS WATER BASE GLUE. (wrinkles the paper all to crap.)

Now I think I'm going to do that easy Pyramid head one. I'm going to use a gluestick though. (or does anyone have a better idea?)

annnd the mini pyramid head is done.

Had to do some customization to it though, so that the head would stay in the right position, so what i did was glued a long piece of paper to the back "neck" tab, and just looped it over inside the body, and glued the head to that with a spot of glue. the heads a TAD crooked, but thats mainly due to poor design (bad line placement)

All in all though, its fucking cute.

Looks good for a first attempt, but doesn't look as good as it should. Not trying to be mean, just saying.

Elmer's water based glue is PERFECTLY FINE. Trick is, you need to spread it out super-thinly so that it doesn't soak the paper. Less glue makes a stronger seal.
