Software Anonymous
Greetings /po/,

Since I don't surf here that often, I am unaccustomed to the software/simulators you use to view folded papercrafts. I tried searching myself, and I got the shit on the left.

Specifically, I'm looking for software where you could design stuff like folding boxes. Pepakura does not allow you to design stuff from scratch.

google sketchUp or Metaseq can be used to make 3d's that can be used for papercrafting, if thats what your looking for.

Do you have to make something first in 3D for all papercraft? Like, couldn't you just make an unfolded box design first and then fold it using some same/different software?

will either one of these print out templates for finished models or are they more used for visual aids when creating the template urself?

As far as creating papercrafts using software is concerned, there seem to be two ways that are commonly used. One is to get a 3D modeling program and create a 3D model in it. The second program required for this way is Pepakura Designer. You import the 3D model into Pepakura Designer, and you can tell it to unfold your 3D model into a template. The less complex the model, the nicer it will unfold in Pepakura. Pepakura Designer isn't free (except the hacks) and it saves files in .pdo file format. In order to read them you can use Pepakura Viewer, which is free.

There is another method if you don't want to learn 3D modeling just yet. Figuring it out by hand and cleaning it up in Photoshop, or just creating it in Photoshop is another possibility. If you don't have Photoshop, and MSPaint is the closest you've got to it, you can try to run a program called GIMP to create papercraft templates in.
