I don't know what Yoshi's Island is supposed to look like, but if this is your first time designing a papercraft, you're on the right track!
SketchUp is very easy to use, and will work great with Pepakura! Just keep the shapes simple and easy (so far they all are). And don't try to finish this in one night: even simple shapes take time if you want to get a good result. ;)

The "smooth cones" as the top of the mountains are hard to make in sketchup, I think you'll need to make one cone on top of another, then a smaller one, another smaller one etc... I don't know.

And a little tip for later: when you import the cylinders into pepakura, it will draw a whole bunch of lines on the surface: delete these. When you finally build it, you won't notice it's not actually a smooth cylinder but a tube with 30+ angles.
For now: keep up the good work! Don't rush things! For me, when I tell myself: "I want to finish this in two weeks!" I seem to enjoy working on it less than when I just work on it when I feel like it.

It is indeed my first time designing papercraft.
All i have for reference is that areal view and a gif of yoshi's island spinning :)

Since you got some nice tropical music in my head in the middle of winter, I'd like to help out a little. First, are you on Mac or PC? Either way, Snes9x would probably work nicely as a Super Nintendo emulator, and the rom for SMW2: Yoshi's Island isn't that hard to find, either. If you have a PC that doesn't like dealing with graphics too much, like maybe a pentium 3 or earlier, then Znes would work nicely for you instead.

I can either give you urls to whatever you need for starting up the game, or you can give me general info on what you need for specs and I can just pack it all up in a .rar file and put it on rapidshare. Roms tend to only be around 1-3 MB, so even dialup users don't have much trouble getting them.

Also if you feel bad about using rom rips for really old games, don't worry, Nintendo themselves have pretty much said that there's no reason for them to take even slight legal action unless the user e-mails them directly saying all of the games you own illegally and crap, then they leave you alone. There are some games that they tell the rom sites to stop distributing if they're going to re-release them on another system, which is why you won't find Super Mario World without going to the 5-in-1 super mario all stars rom.

tl;dr, I'm sure, but in short, if you need help, I'm willing. The model looks good so far.

i have a few doubts, should i use cones like i do now or 8 sided polythingies like champoo did with the plunger from the rayman rabbit?
>> Squid
I think you should use the polythingies like the Rabbid plungers. Definitely. More rounded than cones, more like the original hilltops.
>> chamoo232

>>33346
something like this. cauz the round surface will give you a billion faces in pepakura
>> Anonymous
>>33368
This would be the way to go. It'll look better than just cones. You'd have to change the "base" of the mountains from cylinders to 8-sided polythingies as well to match the tops (or 10 sided, 12 sided, the more sides, the closer you get to a smooth cylinder obviously), but they'll still be recognicable as the mountains.

That will send you to a page to get the ROM of Yoshi's Island.

Here are some game cheats, just for the heck of it.

maybe something you should have done from the start is to put the overview as a texture in sketchup and use that as your botom part to place all the other parts to get very exact scale and positions
>> Anonymous
How does one load these models in Pepakura? I've tried and it doesn't do squat.
>> chamoo232
>>33451
sketchup5 can export to different format like 3ds and obj
>> Anonymous
Full support from me!

I also would love to build this.
>> Anonymous
>>33452

I figured out that much, but like, how do I take the model, open it in pepekura and turn it into a craft? Because whenever it hit open-> the my model, it seems pepakura does nothing.
>> chamoo232
>>33455
thats weird. when you hit open you should be able to browse your file and be able to open any suported files
>> Anonymous
>>33455
Ah, so you already exported your model and got to open in Pepakura? And now you have a split window, and in the left window is your 3D model, and the right window is empty?
You need to find the "Create Development" button and click it.
Then in the right window the unfolded template will be displayed. But you'll find out that if you let Pepakura do things automatically, the papercraft will be unbuildable for mere humans...
You'll need to tell where you want the folds to be (knife icon with the red "no" circle through, and where you want the cuts to be (knife icon). Select one of these tools, and then in the 3D model, select the edge you want cut (or not). It's a lot of work, and since you're making a whole island, I suggest you break down your model in pieces (one mountain at a time) to import them in Pepakura, or you'll loose sight of what you're doing.
There's a tutorial on making paper models at http://www.ericksmodels.com/paper/step0.html, step 6 is Pepakura.
Getting your model ready for Pepakura takes a lot of time, and then deciding where the cuts and folds and glueing tabs should be in Pepakura take more time. Don't despair though, since it looks like many peepz would love to build Yoshi's Island! Just take your time and let them wait a few weeks untill you're finished. Don't work on it 24/7, because you'll get agitated, and be all like "screw this! it's harder than I thought!" ;)

Thanks for the help, but nothing shows up at all, both pages are blank.
>> chamoo232

try a different format. it look stupid but formats do make a difference. if I import a 3ds file I need to use the join all edges thing or else every face end up alone on the template

Cheers. I am not sure if i should but wth

some one requested the obj file. i exported it from sketchup pro 5 to this obj file. put that together with some other new file in a rar and hid it in the enclosed jpg. Open in winrar for the files.

and tbh, im not looking forward to getting this inot pepakura. i think it will be tedious to get it right. i should also leanr how to apply textures either in pepakura or in sketchup hoping it will hold the transformation from SUP to PK

first and formost your doing a really good job it looks very nice. However when i opened the obj file in maya there is a ton of excess geometery, that will make it quite difficult to unfold in pepakura. I opened the file in pepakura and the mountains do not show up. I believe that the problems with this are caused by the items being dirrectly connected to the island. There are quite a few faces, and poly divides that do not seem to be necessary. I am not trying to be rude or an a$$ just telling you what i see from looking at the obj file in a 3d prog and in pepakura. I would make the island 1 piece and all the items on top seperate peieces. Just a suggestion. This will make it easier to unfold later
>> Anonymous
>>33732I would make the island 1 piece and all the items on top seperate pieces.
That's a good tip, I usually break down my models in seperate pieces as well. Not because Pepakura can't handle it, but because *I* can't handle that many polygons when I'm trying to select that one specific edge not to be cut by Pepakura... ;)

Some of the stuff also seems "inside out", and there are a lot of lines that can be removed (Sketchup can use surfaces with 3, 5, 10, 20 corners, but in a "real" 3D modelling program, everything gets converted to triangles or at the most surfaces with 4 corners).
It's not a difficult project (it's all basic shapes), but it's a LARGE project for a first timer. But if you what>>33732said, treat each element as a seperate model, it's gonna be much easier to manage. Then on the island base part, you just make the spot where the mountain needs to be glued in place white. Easy as cake. ;)
Good luck!
>> Anonymous
>>33736
I actually was already thinking about doing that :) Just need to keep it all the same scale.
>>33732
I did not understand half of it and the parts i do know siad that pepakura cant handle some things very well :) and yes this is aswell the first time i try and design papercraft and do something serious with 3d editing.
but all in all, thanks for all the support :D
>> Anonymous
>>33753the first time i try and design papercraft and do something serious with 3d editing.

I think this is actually quite a good model to do as your first self-designed papercraft model.
The most important reason: you'd really like having a papercraft of Yoshi's Island. This way you're gonna get one. ;) Very important reason, it's the same reason why I made my own papercrafts. ;)
Reason no.2: the shapes are not all that difficult. Sure, because it's your first time, you don't know everything yet, and you're gonna run into problems that you don't understand why they are happening. So you're gonna try and fix that, and that's how you learn new stuff. Great project! You're working on it a little over a week now, with school and stuff in between? Look at how much you've done already! As long as you keep enjoying working on it, this is gonna be some kick-ass papercraft! If you can't figure something out on your own, or if you're just wondering what would be the best option (like with cylinders-or-8-sided-thingies dilemma) we're here to help, 'cause we can only encourage peepz that design their own papercrafts for all to enjoy!

I cut up my island and cut most things away in to their own skp files
I wanted to experiment a bit with pepakura 1.1 and imported the 8 sided red tower (the one near the vulcano) But after i join edges there is this platform in the center that is very lonely and will not stick to anything...

Now is there a way to make them stick or should i go with it and photoshop them on later?

ps, textures from sketchup to pepakura. possible or should I make it all white and photoshop them on also?

Sketchup was very easy. Pepakura seems to be a tad more difficult.

i have included skp, obj, dfg and 3ds for the hell of it (open in winrar)

thanks all and good night
>> chamoo232
>>33790
if join edged dont work its probably because because that grey face is reversed. in sketchup if the face is blue without texture it mean its inside out. just right click on the face and choose reverse face or something like that
>> Anonymous
your normals are reversed, find an option to do so, that's why you see stuff "like inside-out"

I finnaly got the hang of combination Sketchup, pepakura 2, Primo pdf printer and Photoshop. maybe alot of extra things. but ahwell.
So far i have a few PDF files textureless of the main components. Yoshi's hut, the pointy tower, the fire red tower, vulcano, that castle thingy, cloud city.

All in all it is going a lot better than i thought. I do have soem exams coming op in the next week so i wont have as much time as i wanted.

Next up i'm gonna try and make all the components in yoshi's island.skp to their own files, then exporting to 3ds. After that loadin them into pepakura, making it all pretty on the paper, then print it to a PDF file and finally adding textures to it.

So i think i'm gonna texture few pdf's first and post those here so you guys can try them.

I'm planning on making the entire thing about 30cm high (with the exception of cloud city)

Glad to hear you're getting the hang of the different programs you need to use now. Many get discouraged because they never did something like this before and it's a lot of work to teach yourself how to use these programs properly.
But now you see, if you take the time and effort, and you're getting stuff to work the way you want it to, you're starting to sound more and more enthustiastic. ;)

But one important tip for now, focus on your exams first, and papercraft later. ;)
