Epic thread deletion makes Anon angry!
>> Anonymous
Do not worry........................
When Chamoo finishes it, she will post it here. She loves to share her work with /po/ so you guys can praise her. If you enjoy a game, and somebody makes a papercraft about it, then why shouldn't you?
But to keep a thread about it just to bump it every time it reaches page 2 only to say "IM A MGS FAN AND I LIKE THIS!!" every time until Chamoo finishes it is just FUCKING annoying. Maybe some of you like the progress pictures but personally, I say: just post it when it's finished. If Chamoo needs help on something, she'll make her own thread. Threads like the last one on this same subject that finally got deleted, reek suspiciously of /b/, and IMHO, they ruin /po/.

This is off topic from the Ray model, but was it ever said what the power source was for Rex/Ray/Gekkou? I can see a large diesel engine fitting in the section of Rex between the rail gun and radome, and a gas engine in the "torso" section of Gekkou, but would Ray have a nuclear engine of some sort to make it optimal for it's amphibious mode, or would it use a diesel/battery combination like older classes of submarines?
>> Anonymous
>>39419
Then why not just keep this thread up for the sake of update photos, and for easy access to the people who are following this thread? It's not like this is a ZOMG FANBOI thread, it's about people who are excited about a model which Japan wasn't clever enough to release to the fanbase in a broader fashion. To put it in one poster's words, "This is the Holy Grail of Metal Gear papercraft", so of course there will be some fanatic fans, but there will also be people such as myself who just want to see someone justice done to a great model.

Not to put down Chamoo232, but it'd be awesome if we could still find the original since two is always better than one, but if it comes down to only being Chamoo's, I would still be a very happy person :)
>> chamoo232
>>39424
ray is anphibious. my guess is that those big arms are used to convert water into hydrogen. it was also said that all the red areas are some kind of artificial muscles. Gekkou look like a miz of ray and rex. it has rex's head shape but ray's muscles legs
>> Anonymous
>>39440
(first of all: YES! Chamoo's back!!!)
I was think thinking that Ray's arms were more like the impeller drive like Red October, and that Ray could have some kind of nuclear drive since it would take a vast amount of energy to power the electronically stimulated muscles in Ray, and the water moving through the arms could be used as a kind of coolant system too.
>> chamoo232
the whole ray system probably use water. in the tanker we see it suck water through the arms to shoot the water cannon and open the tanker. so the arms are indeed used to get water in and maybe out

the Gekkou is controled by AI. the mass produced ray were easy to beat probably because of the virus atacking GW
>> Anonymous
>>39491
They probably went AI for Gekkou because 1-too small for human control, and 2-it's worth the risk of having as group of Gekkous go rogue compared to a bunch of towering Rays run around smashing everything in sight. It's also possible that Gekkou is human controlled the same way a UAV is.

What kind of glue tabs are being used for this model?

It seems to be a reoccurring theme as of late. I'd like for the users of the board to return to being mostly helpful and friendly, but it seems like that will take awhile. It's unfortunate. I don't contribute as much to this board anymore, because I'm not here as often because of all of the people going out of their way to insult others.

>>39594

Wow, I would have never thought to ask that question. I personally don't like the small, pointy triangle ones, because they act too much like thorns. I don't recall building a rose papercraft either, so it's a little confusing for my little brain.

Not sure if I get this question... But the shape and size of the glueing tabs basically depends on the shape and size of the part that they need to glue to. Pepakura only knows one type of glueing tab (basic symmetrical one) and depending how big the part is, it can shrink from a more rectular form to a triangular one.
But sometimes this isn't the best shape, so I usually check all the glueing tabs and correct them if necessary.
>> chamoo232
>>39607
my final template will be a pdf just like most of my templates. this way its easy to rescale if someone want to and I wont end up with 10 question on what kind of paper to use a3 or a4
>> Anonymous
>>39613
I meant were the glue tabs going to be automatic(Pepakura) or custom, I'm just thinking about some Pepakura models I've done where glue tabs were either microscopic or awkward because they are automatically formated. Although since it is Chamoo doing this one, I am very assured that the final product will be very professional in nature and appearance whether Pepakura or custom, and I just want to know which to expect, since they each have a different feel to them during construction.

>>39624
That's good, all the pdf models I've done have always been very reliable

you can change the size and position of the tabs in pepakura. all the models I did so far were in pepakura and I always work on the tabs so the pieces are easy to assemble.

So if the mass production version of ray didn't require a tail, why did the prototype need one?
>> Anonymous
>>39745Wikipedia's info: Prototype version

Metal Gear RAY was originally developed by the USMC to locate and eliminate Metal Gear REX units and their derivatives. In the prologue of Metal Gear Solid 2 (the Tanker chapter), however, it is captured by Revolver Ocelot while being transported on the covertly refitted oil tanker Discovery.

This version is labeled "MARINES", has a cockpit (accommodating a single pilot) and a long tail. The RAY is an amphibious craft which allows for maneuverability in land and at sea: the long tail is intended for balance while making leaps or operating underwater. The entirety of the forward interior of the cockpit is a heads-up display, allowing the pilot to look around as if there were no obstruction between him and the battlefield.

Mass Produced RAY

Later during the Plant chapter of Metal Gear Solid 2, Revolver Ocelot delivers the stolen prototype RAY to the Patriots, an Illuminati-esque organization secretly running the United States. Under their direction, the unit is redesigned for control by the AI known as "GW" in defense of Arsenal Gear. The Arsenal Gear has a force of these slave RAYs ready for immediate deployment against any possible threats.

The mass-production RAYs lack the tail of the prototype, have rounded knees and have only one sensory output or "eye" as opposed to having two like the prototype version, and are labeled "US NAVY".

There is evidence to indicate that these RAYs are less durable than the prototype version. For example, when Revolver Ocelot comandeered the original RAY, fire from weapons such as an M-203 grenade failed to damage it, while the leg and head of the Navy RAYs could be damaged by Stinger missiles. When the RAYs went haywire due to the effects of the virus on GW, Solidus was also able to make short work of the RAYs by using the enhanced strength and agility provided by his combat suit to evade their attacks and then destroying the RAYs' control units(which are assumed to be vulnerable when the RAY's head is "open") with his P90. The level of weakness of the mass-produced RAYs could be explained by the fact that Arsenal was intended to operate with full support and escorts from the Navy. Corners may have been cut to make mass production cheaper, and the RAYs' weaknesses compensated with naval support.

Something else found on Wiki:

>The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2 actually reveals that the Arsenal below the Big Shell is not the only one, and each Arsenal is run by its own networked AI system).

up and down will be hard to change since the surface is large that way but left and right should be easy to change while you assemble the parts. its only paper after all. the tail has 12 parts. so bending each one just a tiny bit will make it curve.

>> Anonymous

>>39870
It would seem that not only was the problem of balance solved in the original by the use of a tail, but the feet also had glue tabs on the bottom. Plus even if the mass production model doesn't balance on it's own, I think that it would still be a welcomed addition. (nice pic too, all that needs to be done is to smooth out the knees)

This problem could also be solved by adding some kind of weight inside the head before gluing it on.

>> Anonymous
>>39874
many people use a small coin, or thety use extra paper to create ballast in their paper model.
>> Anonymous
>>39914
That would be cheating! ;) Of course, it is one solution...
But best would be if the designer makes a pose where you don't need to "cheat": like with the tail touching the ground, that is a good solution.
As for the version without the tail: I never played the game, so I don't know how it moves, but isn't there any pose thinkable where it supports itself?
>> Anonymous
>>39918
The prototype version does use it's tail to create balance, but this is for the mass produced version that doesn't have a tail. The same pose could be used, but like>>39914says, it would require forward weight, such as ballast in the head. And it's not cheating if people can't see what you did it make it that way ;)
>> Anonymous
>>39920The same pose could be used, but it would require forward weight, such as ballast in the head.
Thats why I said: make a different pose for that one so it can stand without having to put a ballast in the head.
