Alternatively, what I usually do (since I have access to the Pro version) is export it as an obj file (NEVER as 3ds) and import that in Metasequoia to do some tweaking. Metasequoia's mqo format has never given me any trouble with textures or anything, it's THE best compatible 3D program for Pepakura. If you don't have access to SketchUp Pro, you can download the trial which only lasts several hours, but if you only use it for exporting and you do the modelling in the standard version you'll only need to use it a couple of seconds each time. ;)
