I recently found some transparency film and though, "Hm, for what can I use this?" The first idea that came to mind was a window of some sort. So I decided to make it the window on a cabinet. Now, I have the body and door of the cabinet in the proper dimensions, so I just need hinges and something to keep it shut.

I'm considering two possibilities for the hinges, either just glue pieces of paper to the side, which would be simple, but wouldn't look great, or actually design hinges in Sketchup, which would look nice if I could get them right, but would be hard.

I'd like some sort of mechanism to keep the cabinet door shut. I'm thinking some sort of key-turning device, either with an actual key (would be kinda cool to be able to lock it), or a knob that you'd have to turn.

Now, this will be the first (second if you count a crappy base for Chamoo232's Pyramid Head that I gave to a friend) papercraft I've designed, and I'm pretty new to Sketchup. So any advice you guys might have would be appreciated.

Anyway, I think this'd be a pretty nice way to store/display papercrafts or other small items, and I'll post it here when I finish.

Picture is my current progress, there's a groove in the door in which the transparency will sit.

Sweet, this'll really help, thanks anon.

Now all I need is a knob of some sort. Anyone know of one out there, or will I have to design one?

go to the link below and type knob, I checked and there were quite a few. Just import into your model and resize as needed.

It's not as exciting as a key or a knob but if you put magnets on either side, not on the surface but on the reverse side (inside) so it can't be seen, that should offer a simple alternative solution, I think.

it wouldn't be too hard to make a working knob with a latch. All you have to do is make a circular hole in the windowframe part and make a simple cylinder + latch and latch holder thing. I bet this doesn't make any sense as I type it but it sure does in my head right now.
>> Lupononcrepi !!vtf6Y2L7QVg
I've been trying to make it work just like that, but Sketchup keeps doing funky things, so it's not working out well. I know what it is that I need, but I'm not sure how to make it.

Can anyone help with the latch? I can't seem to get it right in Sketchup.

what do you have so far?

All I have is the body in the picture up top and the hinges from Freebooter Fox. I'm new at designing and Sketchup likes to do everything but what I want it to. All I want is a small knob on the front so it looks nice and opens easily, but it needs a latch to hold it closed. I keep trying to make a little hole on either side for a cylinder to fit through with an old-timey key shaped piece at the end that could just catch on the inside wall when you turn it. If you want, I can upload what I have to rapidshare so you can see what I've got.

Also, does anyone know if you can buy transparency sheets at craft stores? There's a Michael's just down the street that might have some, but otherwise I have to ask a teacher at my school, and they never have enough just for the overheads they do, let alone for me to make a cabinet.

You should probably try and office supplies store instead, (they usually have cheaper cardstock, too- fuck craftstores) or the actual teacher stores like School Crossing or whatever's around you- they have lots of neat crap, maybe not transparencies, but worth a shot if you can't find them at Staple or Office Depot

I actually couldn't find any in the local craftstores, but the office supply places had them.

Wal-Mart has the cheapest cardstock I can get to, however.

You could always try shopping online?

Knob?

Thanks for the info.

That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, except it needs a less stupid knob part, and a way to keep it from sliding around in the hole.

I think I've just about got the latch right, so now comes an important question. How do I make it unfold not stupidly in Pepakura and do I have to go find the keygen for pep 2 or has one been made for 3?
>> Anonymous
No keygen for 3 yet, that I know of.
Follow this for Pep2: http://rapidshare.com/files/79349035/pepakura_keygen.rar

Thank you anon. I'm ready to unfold it now, and if I can get it to not look stupid, I'll start a test build in paper today.

Actually, it seems that my malware blocker has taken to thinking that this file is a trojan. Or is that just Avast being a douche?
>> Octo
Should be OK. I used it to get mine a while ago, but as always, use your best judgment, especially when downloading from something like Rapidshit. Also make sure to have your antivirus software running when opening anything like that.

My antivirus stops it whether or not I want it to. The only way I'd be able to download it is to pause Avast, which I don't want to do. It's possible that it's mistaken, since I've tried several files from several sites and I always get the same warning.

Thanks, but I downloaded the file anyway. Nothing bad happened. Avast is just stupid. Then it warned me when I turned it back on about the trojan in my recycle bin.

I'm working on the test build now, but I'm having a few problems. For one, the hinge likes to fuck up when pep unfolds it, being split across several areas. And my printer doesn't seem to like pep, so I can't print things properly (I had to export to a crappy BMP). Any ideas how to fix these?
>> Anonymous

My recommendation is to print the .pdo for the hinge and assemble separately, then attach to the finished case. I think the Sketchup file I uploaded was the full 3D model and wasn't broken down yet for unfolding.
>> Lupononcrepi !!vtf6Y2L7QVg

I think that's what I'll be doing, since it never unfolds right. I just need to figure out how much to scale it by to get the proper size.
