OK, I know the board title says 'PAPERcraft' but has anyone ever tried making things out of alternate materials?

I was thinking of trying to make some of the simpler things out of sheet metal.

Picture of origami kusudama flower hopefully related.

I have some basic experience and a few tools (snips, rotary, drillpress, says, soldering gun, etc).

I don't have access to a bending brake or shear, but I will once the fall quarter starts.

I already have some sheet steel I use for stencils (it is actually pretty cheap) and some old aluminum flashing.

I was just wondering if someone had tried it already.

I haven't tried it myself, but I have seen other origami out of thin sheet metal, so I know it CAN be done.

I've done origami out of aluminium foil, and that works out great, assuming it's a simpler model. And a lot of papercraft models of glasses are designed to be printed on transparent/translucent film.

Robert Lang has done origami in metal sheeting, as sculpture.

If you're referring to the metal sculptures in Santa Monica, then those weren't done with sheet metal... They were folded from paper, then cast in bronze using the lost wax method. I saw them in person back when they were originally put there, and they were definitely just bronze castings, not folded (fear of lawsuits caused them to remove the garibaldi and sea urchin pretty quickly, leaving just the dragonfly and frog.) I never saw the two new ones though. My favorite thing was seeing the crease patterns etched into the streets' intersections, and wondering what good that would do...

I haven't done sheet metal oragami, but I have done fabric oragami. You can make some really cute and/or awesome things with stiffened fabric.

I made the flower out of paper last night, i mean if you had reasonably thin sheet metal, pliars and a bit of patience, suuure.
