Finally its almost done, I only need to make the cannons. =)

impressive!

Very impressive indeed!

Note to Moot: /po/ needs its own banning system, 10 reports and the thread is deleted maybe?

And why the hell'd you have to go and mention us at the panel!? They didn't know we EXISTED before!

Maybe, I'm new to this (this is my first attempt at 3D modeling and build my own papercraft) so I have to figure out how to do a lot of stuff like open the pieces to attempt to paint them and figure out how the heck I will build it. XD
>> Moony
if you save it in Google Earth 4 format, you can open it in pepakura, and at least start figuring out where tabs and such would go, even if it doesn't have a texture

Thanks for the info, that would help.

very very impressive. ok just a few tips on modeling and making paper craft from it.

- Think about the size of the surfaces on your model and actually cutting and gluing parts together. some small details may not be worth the added trouble. (ie the subtle surface changes)

- avoid curvy stuff is possible unless the design calls for it, but it can be a pain to make

- remember your building a paper exoskeleton so to speak. i would consider looking at the joints and attaching the leg parts further into the circular part. i say this for two reasons 1. strength it will be a small tight connection. 2 it will be much easier to build if the angle is not so sharp in that tiny space.

next actually creating the paper parts.

-export your model as either a .3ds or .obj ive tended to have less problems w/ 3ds

-im just learning about uv texture mapping now so im no help there yet but if anybody else can chime in that would be great.

-get your hands on pepakura designer which ever way you chose.

-open up the .3ds or .obj in pepakura unfold and create patterns you can also apply a texture map if you had created one previously while modeling the object.

lastly id consider making some simpler objects just to get a feel for how pepakura works and how 3d models translate into paper craft.

Thanks for the tips, I will try to remember them once I attempt to Papercraft the model (I still need to search for pepakura).

Anyway, here is the finished 3D model, is about 15cm tall and the smallest part to ensemble (without taking into account the triangular thing on the legs chassis) is the small leg cylinder that is about 2cm so it should be hard to put it together once it is papercrafted.

I'm very proud of myself right now. :D

Any comments?

looks great to me,
nice work.

good luck man, i have been reading your stuff here havent posted, ive just been super busy with my master chief helmet and warthog, but it looks awesome! your gonna crap your pants when you see what pepakura does with the curved edges! just take your time in choosing what edges to open. :)

(fyi) for the curved edges in pepakura you can erase the extra fold lines it will show..
right click > color edge > hide
that way you can just use a metal rod to curve it it looks much better

Stupid typos, It should read "it shouldn't be hard".

I'm at work right now so I havent do anything yet (not even download pepakura) but I got a question, would it mater if this model is divided by groups of pices when I export it to pepakura? I mean, would it get fused once exported or it will still be divided? should I save it by each individual pice?

explain it through the use of images!

i'm gonna try to answer your question, and yeah you coulda phrased it a little clearer.
If you mean, its divided like on model is a leg, another, a cannon, etc...Then you open them seperately in pepakura and it will open them up into papercraft. also it will not be fused together, but if you modeled everything proportionately everything should match up when you build it.

So, if I export the whole model into pepakura it will still keep the groups I used to separate each piece right?

By the way, I know this questions are annoying, thanks for your help.
>> The_weanis
>>78774
Well, it SHOULD, but, i have never exported such a complex model, so i'm not sure, go ahead and try it, it wont do any harm if it doesnt work right.

I take back my previous statement google sketch up sucks at exporting .3ds and .obj. I was doing some tests and getting extra surfaces and just wrong junk but the .kmz format works great. Just a heads up if you used those from sketchup and something looks funky it could just be the file format.
>> The_weanis
>>78779
is sketchup easier to work with than metasequoia?

>>78782
Well, I without any knowledge in 3D manage to do tha Immortalt model so I guess so.
