3D STUDIO MAX
Any good advice for a novice in 3d modelling ?, a particular book ?

If it's just for papercraft: 3ds max is a bit overkill...
Sketchup or Metasequoia have all the features you need.
In the end: just using the programs a lot, starting out with something very simple, just to get to know all the features of the programs by clicking all the buttons once is the best way to learn.

if you are just starting out peachpit press puts out visual quickstart guides to many of the popular programs. I believe that they have one for max. It is not a super in depth book, but it gives you all the basics and allows you to access them quickly. the book is set up where if you want to do X you look it up and they show you. and they are super cheap for computer books, $25-40
