Hey, does anyone have any tips on using pepakura?

I'm tring to use sketchup generated .obj files...but It keeps deleting vertices or adding corners to flat regions or fucking up my angles.

And its failing every. single. time.

Tips? Links?

with the vertices, it always tells me it deletes them but the model appears the same to me in the end.

as for the flat corners, just ignore them, you can set the level of angle "awareness" at 178 degrees or so and all the unnecessary lines will disappear.

I ran an example real quick:

All the edges on this face were drawn to be 90*...its supposed to be shaped like a thick plus sign. Top left, wierd angle. Bottom left, WTF is that?

could be two things,

one, how did you make it in sketchup? that has a lot to do with it

two- what is the model of? if there are missing parts or too much surface, you may be able to disconnect that and connect it to the other parts where you assumed it would stay.

Made a square, then attached rectangles to each side, deleted the original squares sides. Dragged down to create 3D body.

Unrealated: Made a rectangular base on other side of the shape.

Exported as .obj, export settings: No checkboxes except switch YZ axis.

Open in Peparuka, cancel the dialogs, unfold.

try exporting as a Google earth obj, or is that what you did?

Try separating the base from the other object usually breaking up the modules in a model help alot.

Try something other than Sketchup. Models translate very poorly into Pepakura if made in Sketchup. I recommend Wings 3D

Not a google earth object, a Wavefront .obj

Will try modularizing, post back soon

Wings 3D? Is it free? Hows the learning curve?

I tried modularizing it. Failed. Even more weird angles.

It's free, and it's what I've started using just recently. I've been able to make some cool models, though I haven't been able to make some of them into papercrafts yet.

Learning curve? Um, well, since I started using it, it was my first 3D modeling program ever, and if you'll look on my blog (www.goblinpaper.blogspot.com) the Guitar Hero notes took me 4 hours to model. Seriously. However, I had no idea what I was doing, and I didn't read any tutorials. If you'll also take a look at my blog, you'll see the Lucky Star cat. That one took me about one hour to make, and it was the third model I ever did. I also did the cataquacks after I had made about 4 more models. Know how long it took me to make the models for those? 20 minutes. And I still have not read one tutorial to this day.

On the downside to not reading tutorials, I have no rightly idea how to texture. So I guess the learning curve is slightly steep if you don't read tutorials, but I found it's easy enough to learn on your own if you just apply yourself.

Sounds good. I'll check out the tutorials on wikibooks.

Hpefully I wont get the same faggotry with pepakura.

Pepakura does some weird thing with scaling sketchup models too, I've noticed.
