I will possibly be getting one of these from freecycle, and will then come up with some sort of model. Do you want just a box (fast) or do you want detail, like insertable cartridges and sliding power button?

Not sure if I can pull off the regular buttons actually being pressed or not, but I'll try.
>> Anonymous
thanks man

well i guess just the box form will do^^
>> Anonymous
>>130376
a detailed one would be awesome and much appreciated. :) If you do cartridges may I suggest any of the zelda, final fantasy, and harvest moon ones? also Mario and the six golden coins? or better yet, just a blank cartridge that can be modded as the person printing it out and building it likes?
>> Moony
>>130486

blanks were how I was going to go, since I only have a few that I can scan the labels in. I do have Zelda and tetris, but only the GBC harvest moon. I'll plug in any images you can get me, though. The carts will be just the box with a notch out of the corner.

Maybe you could e-mail the guy and ask to dissamble it then scan it if he still has it.

i'll try to get you some games scanned by this weekend. :) i don't have many but i'll scan what i've got.

that's rather... icky. mine will be much more solid (I get the actual game boy tomorrow evening, so I should be able to get the boxy version by this weekend)

It's a simple box papercraft, nothing fancy since it doesn't need to be. The curved corner sucks, but I'd fix that manually in photoshoop so it actually curves. And I think the guy that assembled it was thinking why am I building this it's so lame?! while he was building it so didn't take much care to do it right.
What I love about it is its simplicity (I don't want one with 1 mm high buttons and 1 mm deep grooves on the back; it's not going to be my crowning achievement I'll build because it's afstbuilt papercraft that resembles nostalgia GameBoy, not because it's an exact replica) but above all: I really like the textures; they're Nintendo style kinda cartoony textures, not I'll take pictures, paste them on, and think it'll look good as lifelike textures.
When you do that, usually you'll achieve the exact opposite: instead of it looking lifelike, you'll end up emphasizing the fact that it's not.

Moony:

I have the scans of my GB and GBC games done. Do you want the pictures in their original size from where I scanned them or do you want me to size them down a bit and then post them?
>> Anonymous
downscaling a little would be nice ^.^
>> Moony
>>130850
maybe rapidshit a zip of the original textures?

>>130842
the only pictures I'm planning on just slapping on are the labels for the cartridges. And it won't have grooves, that's just useless. The buttons will be movable if I make them at all, which would be the only reason to make them.

There you go. ^-^ hope they're useable. there's only 7 and the zelda one may not be useable without some touching up but the rest should be good.
>> Moony
>>130873
even if zelda isn't usable, I have that cartridge, so it'll be in there no matter what :D

Hope this will help... soon. Almost done. Yes to detailed for a papercraft but I'll change it and bring the poly count down. Also some things arent right, having problems with the speaker as you can probably see. Then pepakura, then your very own original gameboy papercraft. Easy.

holy shit. very nice work

SPOILER: He didn't make that model himself but found it somewhere on the web.

Nevertheless: reducing polycount and fixing it for pepakura is hard enough so his work will be appreciated!

that is a kickass model. It definitely needs tweaking before papercraft conversion, as you said. I do look forward to seeing your rendition of the Game Boy.

In other news: I have acquired a game boy, and will be scanning for proper dimensions, shooping skins, and pepakurizing in illustrator over the next two weeks or so (I'm taking a 4 day vacation next weekend, so it might take longer to finish). I'll post the beta model when it's ready. ohnoes! now you know my methodology!

the guy who posted the pic of the 3d model is one of my room mates, he didn't get it off the net, i saw him making it
>> me_me_me
>>131333Could you post those images 4 me so I can use em, cos at the moment there really arent any images i can use to texture with.

Also...>>131213I did make it... give me a few days and ill basic texture it and finnish up the back and speakers.

Now low poly, all textures. Just need to pep it and its good to go, but that can wait until tomorrow. Ive made one game that will hopefully fit in the back of it, and the on switch will move across and hold the game in place like it should, hopefully.
>> Anonymous
>>132719and the on switch will move across and hold the game in place like it should, hopefully
Would be a nice touch. ;) Make sure the mechanism you use for it is simple and well... works. ;)
Also, I'm not sure if you want opinions or not, because if you do, it's better if you post your pics with the lines over it; rendering it makes a nicer picture but it hides all the stuff that could provide /po/ with clues what might become trouble spots and what you should be watching out for.
>> me_me_me
     File :-(, x)
>>132721

trouble spots you say, i believe ive found some of those, i think its due to some of the polys having to many sides, still working on it, its almost done i hope. Also, if you need moar screens to help with any decisions as to where to go next, tell me.
>> me_me_me
     File :-(, x)
maybe i should make the buttons simpler?

other than that, in pep im only getting 1 or 2 red lines that i need to fix up, then it will be good to go, ill make one thats a bit moar complicated with a switch (will be quite small) and an easier one that isnt so fiddly. any other requests?
>> Anonymous
since when game boy became a fucking PC? (i thought it meant personal computer??)
>> Anonymous
>132997

where the fuck are you? PC here stands for paper craft you dumb fucking idiot
>> Anonymous
>>132988
Yes, the Start and the Select button would need to be easier. ;) It's too bad because I think just half cylinders are doable at that scale, 3-4-5 sections would probably be enough to get a "round feeling" effect but I think the rounded ends of the real buttons is something you'll immediately notice as "different from the real thing", more than the "concave" tops of the A and B buttons. But they're too hard to make at that size I think.
The game cartridge will probably need to be quite a bit smaller than the slot it needs to fit into, more than you'll probably imagine (I always get surprised that I make stuff like that a bit smaller already, but never enough apparantly lol) but you'll find that out exactly how much when testbuilding it, and then it's just a matter of re-scaling, which isn't a big deal.
I don't get how you are planning to make the little sliding button work exactly though; you don't seem to have made a mechanism for it or maybe I'm just not looking right it's a bit hard to see. Keep it up!

Do them manually.
One wide, a little too long strip that you will manually curve and glue. Pepakura isn't at that level and only goes by polygons sadly, so you might need to print some tests to see the right length for the strip.
Or, you can just make the polygons on the ends of the button, so only the sides of the botton are round while the surface is normal. But I recommend the first idea.

Well, since everyone's working on the original Gameboy.. bump for color version.

i don't have the original gameboy but i have a gameboy color,
height:5 1/4 inches width:3 inches
i assume the original is the same size.

cant seem to remove the red lines... any ideas?
>> Anonymous
>>135205
Red lines means the edges aren't properly connected: even if you zoom in as close as you can, the edges seem connected, but in reality, they can still be 0.000000000001 pixel apart. Read through the tutorials of whatever 3D app you're using what you're doing wrong.
As a possible quick fix: in the 3D menu of Pepakura Designer, there's an option called Join Isolated Edges. If it's really just 0.0000000001 pixel, Pepakura can probably fix it, if the gap is too big, you need to go back and fix it in the 3D model.
>> Anonymous
>>135212

I've had Pep split parts that were EXTRUDED from each other in my 3d prog, sometimes Pep fucks up during importing.
>> Anonymous
>>135216
It's the 3D app that fucks up, not Pepakura.
Extruding, stretching lines, all that stuff isn't as flawless as most people think, it's why all over the world, CAD engineers are cursing the software they work with because it always seems to fuck things up that can't possibly go wrong.................
>> Anonymous
>>135218

I have created 3d models vertice by vertice clicking points in space to create little fucking triangles, and Pep has told me they weren't connected edges. Pep isn't perfect, importing/exporting 3d models from format to format isn't a kind process.
>> Anonymous
>>135220
Of course Pepakura isn't perfect (wouldn't it be great if there was a computer program that was?)
But about your example: I know for instance that in Metasequoia, you have to hold down the CTRL button to click the exact vertices otherwise, you will not be clicking the vertices, but like I said, probably 0.000000001 pixels next to it.
It's in the Command->Create section of the English Help files (http://www.metaseq.net/english/index.html)
Personally, I'd have never thought of that (I was having the same red line problems as you) if I hadn't checked the help files.
Now you were not using Metasequoia, were you..? But all 3D apps have stuff like this that is very simple, as long as you've read it once.

I really think the problem is in your 3D model: Pepakura doesn't support many formats, because it doesn't actually convert anything, it just loads it as it is: converting it can't really go wrong, because it isn't taking place..?

ive been using lightwave and from what i can tell everything is how it should be, all points are correct nothing is over lapping. i havent had alot of experience with ligthwave but if you select what looks to be 1 point it will tell you that you have selected 2 (in the case that they are .0000000001 of a pixle apart) so from what i can tell everything is perfect, though clearly not, before i did the point selection thing and joined overlapping points the red lines were everwhere, and i also split any 5 or moar sided polys into no moar than 4 all of which helped. also lightwave exports as a .lwo if that helps.

>>135228
I could try taking a look at it.
>> me_me_me
ive decided stuff trying to fix the red lines, instead i will make it quickly and where tabs are needed i will add them, that way i can upload a working .pdf for you even though the pep file doesnt work.
>> me_me_me

added flaps where flaps were needed. will print it tomorrow and see just how hard it is to make it. some of the pieces are very small so i will see what needs to be done about those.

>>135379
cooll looks nice
>> Anonymous
select all the verticies(points) and then set teh merge verticies options to .00001 or some other very small number. You are getting the red lines because it is seperate geometry according to the program. Merge verts and you will be fixed

>>135379
Doesn't look very stable. You let Pepakura do too much work by itself.

Before clicking Unfold, look at the model and click crease lines you think should be separated in the template. And enlarge the model a little just so that the tabs won't be that big on the thinner lines.

Oh, and after clicking Unfold, right-click in the template area and choose whichever option lets you cut pieces apart. Separate all thin lines from the big shapes.

do not expect progress from me. I've got a shitload of final projects due mostly next week, was bitten by a dog, and had a kidney stone earlier this week, so things have been... hectic. also, any tips for papercrafting one handed would be helpful (right hand is mostly out of commission due to aforementioned dog)
>> Cotton Eyed Joe
>>137988
Ouch x2. Didja need stitches for the dogbite?
>> Moony
>>138006
would have if it wasn't an animal bite; they don't stitch those (unless they're very long, in which case you get a partial stitch, leaving a half inch gap) to allow bacteria to be forced out more efficiently. It's been almost a week, and I have most function back in that hand, but can't grip tightly, or properly move the middle two fingers without quite a bit of pain. the only serious wound was a large puncture (1/2" long, 1/8" wide) in the middle of my palm, causing a slight infection of the tendons, which is why the two fingers are so painful. Another few days of antibiotics and pain killers though, and I should be right as rain. Just in time to finish all my final projects. Thank goodness I'm graduating in a month.

Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow.

I got bitten on my lip when I was young by my dog, they wanted to stitch it up. They didn't end up doing it, mainly because I was a sissy and had to eat soft food for a week with a bandage holding the corner of my mouth together -_-
