What kind of paper should I use?
For the majority of the models a 120g/m² cardstock should be fine.
For bigger projects use 180g/m² and for smaller projects/parts use 90g/m².
For cubee you can use plain paper (75g/m²).
For lb values, one should be fine with a 67lb paper but since I do not use this unit of weight I ask for others who are more familiar with it to give the appropriate value. (I got the value of 67lb lurking around here)

What kind of glue to use?
Any type of glue made for paper.
Don't know about brand names but lurking around /po/ found some people recommend:
Elmer's glue
Aleene's tacky glue
Eileen's Tacky Glue

What else should I have in hand?
X-acto knife
Self healing mat
Scoring tool
Tweezers for more complicated models with smaller pieces

Where can I find all these materials?
On the craft section of Wal-Mart.
On a craft store.

Where can I find templates for <model name>?
Before asking, search these general papercraft sites. You'll be able to find many papercrafts that may interest you. If you can't find on any of these sites, than ask on /po/
/po/ board:
http://zip.4chan.org/po/imgboard.html(this board have 10 pages of threads! take a look first ok?)

/po/ Archive:
http://papercraft.wikidot.com/start

Papercraft Museum:

For cubees try:
http://www.cubeecraft.com/

I have other questions!
Q:How do I open .pdo files?
A:You'll need Pepakura Viewer (or designer).

Q:Where can I get it? And is it free?
A:Get it here: http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/download/download.html
Pepakura Viewer is free and Designer is paid. Viewer will be enough for you if you're a beginner. Otherwise you should already know about this program and all.

Q:What else should I know?
A:Learn to search for the information you want before asking. It's pretty tiresome to keep answering the same questions everytime. Just imagine how boring it would be if you had to answer the same question every week. It's the same for a community. Ask only if you really can't find the answer.

Q:Where could I find the answers for my questions beside here?
A:Google is your frind! Also yahoo and whatever other search engine is!

side note:
Ok guys, I decided to create this thread for many reasons and I hope it'll help begginers to start their craft history.
I also hope that more members will help this tutorial grow and depending on how this goes, I'll make another thread with an even better tutorial.
>> BlueDragon !CczEY9.Ud.
Cool, wish this could get stickied, but alas. Everybody needs to copy this so when someone asks we just paste this in every time. Bravo, well done anon.
>> Anonymous
>>202410
if we have to past a link to the sticky then why not just paste a link to what they ask for? they can be more specific then and get help more tailored to their needs.
>> BlueDragon !CczEY9.Ud.
>>202413
I meant for when people post threads asking what type of paper and glue to use when you know there just trolling. Just paste in the op's first post and be done with it.
>> Anonymous
>>202413
The idea here is to make this thread as a guide thread so we can reduce the number of help threads opened. I'm trying to make it unnecessary to create a thread asking for inital help like, every week.

Anway, just remembered to add this:

Q:How do I convert .pdo files to .pdf/.png files? I can't do that with Pepakura Viewer!
A:First you'll need Pepakura Viewer to open the .pdo files.
Second you'll need CutePDF, Zan Image Printer (I think the first one is free but I'm not sure, second one is paid) or any other printer simulator.
Now just open Pepakura Viewer and print the model but instead of using your printer use the printer simulator. Zan Image Printer can "print" to .TIFF, .PDF, .PNG, .JPG and others for sure. CutePDF should be able to "print" to .PDF
>> Anonymous
>>202414
how ignorant can you be?
1. just because they are asking advice on what to do that seems fairly simple to you doesn't mean they are trolling. it's how you learn.

2. if they were trolling and you knew they were trolling, why respond at all?

>>202416
as far as i know this has been tried and was just overlooked and the same questions were still asked. you are better off having this as copypasta. People won't read the sticky unless it is one concise post with all the info in. there are loads of stickys at 405th.com that i don't read simply because there are so many and most of them consist of discussion more than information and i end up reading as much to get what i want to know as i would have done if i hadn't bothered with the sticky.

also the only time a mod shows up is if there are enough votes from us to delete spam, it hardly seems like anything is going on to improve the place beyond that (inb4 user banned for this post ;__;)
>> gizmogal !MmLOyiCYJs
someone needs to sticky this thread since the ollllllld sticky left for some reason.
>> Anonymous
>>202417
yep. last sticky was overlooked, and trolls (which make up half of the 'what paper do i use' threads now) just started to make them more to piss everyone off. didn't work before, why would it work now?
>> gizmogal !MmLOyiCYJs
>>202434
well, at least then there would be actual reasoning for banning those who ignore the sticky... but then again not much moderation goes on here. :\
who got all those janitor positions from a while back, anyhow? they ought to be weeding out for all the junk posts we've been getting...

I have a good question which I don't think was asked before:

For those who have done their own 3d models to papercraft, how boxy does it need to be? Do you have to consider each surface as a paper shape (ie it is converted to pepakura with no alterations whatsoever), or can you make something more smooth (ie pepakura would convert it to something more papercraft-able).
>> Anonymous
>>202657
I'm not sure I fully understand, but Pepakura just takes what you put into it, and rotates every polygon along the edges until they all lie flat.

If you want to make a good papercraft, you have to figure out yourself how all the shapes you need can be unfolded easily to a flat surface, then make the 3D shapes that way, and THEN let Pepakura do what you already worked out before. NOT the other way around (where Pepakura tries to unfold something you have no idea what it will look like unfolded - what most people seem to do)

How blocky it needs to be? That's up to you, to keep it buildable. If it's your first, then you probably have to test build a lot, or just play it on the safe side. But for instance if you make a 8 sided tube, and unfold it in Pepakura, you can hide the lines and in the end it will look good without folding it.

That's just something you have to find out yourself by doing.

>> Anonymous
>>202657
Remember, in your instructions, you can note that not all parts needed to have lines folded. For example, in Ninjatoe's Lara croft, he specifically says to roll the leg parts insted so it looks round. The amoount of polygons for each round leg/arm part is jst enough number of tabs to be glued alright.(Not too many)

I only have one question regarding the paper. I've already heard that the 120 g/sm and 180g/sm are good for most models, but the only thing I always wondered about is whether it works with every printer or not? I mean, 180g/sm is 2,5 times thicker than regular copy paper, so doesn't this create a paper jam?

Thanks in advance. I hope someone will finally sticky this topic, because then we won't have to face the usual trolling/newb posts.
>> Anonymous
>>202858
No, not every printer will be able to print on a 180g paper.
You need to check if your printer can do that. It's normally written on the user manual or on the manufacturer site.
If you still can't find this info, you could
1 - give it a try though I don't think it's a good idea since the paper could get stuck and that stuff
2 - go to a store where they sell the printer and ask
3 - call the manufacturer support and ask

Good question. Will add that when I decide to make another thread like this

If you are using pepakura, you can bleed the ink to go onto the tabs slightly.
>> Anonymous
bump??
>> Anonymous
>>203275
you could try using a thinner paper
or you could try with another type of ink
some inks may give you this problem, others are more resistent
are you printing with a laserjet or a inkjet?

I have also heard from other Anon's in the past that using felt tip markers and coloring in the white edges also works quite well

just make sure you have a good range of colored markers if you're going to go that route, since you'd want to get the color exact

hey im new to /po/ and this seems like a fun hobby to start. the only thing is that im using a mac so http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/download/download.html
wont work on my computer. is there another version of this for mac or what?
>> Anonymous
>>203691

Pepakura FAQ:

Q1-1. Is there any version available for the Mac?
We are sorry we do not have a Mac version.

So unless there's something in Mac that is similar to WINE in Linux, I'm not guessing so...
>> Anonymous
ok well thanks for your time
>> Anonymous
>>203692
pepakura doesn't work properly in wine anyway.
>> ANON !!h3KpZcKKNah
>>203691
Don't worry. There is a lifetimes worth of stuff that you can do without pepakura. And the nice "cough" people on /po/ will sometimes do pdfs from pdos for you if you grovel a lot.
>> Anonymous
never used a mac/linux so I never really cared about program compatibility
but yesm there're lots of models in pdf available so having pepakura is not REALLY necessary, specially if you want to begin
and you can always ask for someone to convert the .pdo to .pdf, luckly someone will do it for you

Hey, one more question about papercraft: I was trying to make Snake in a Box as my first model, but there are lots of tiny tabs at the parts that form the legs. What's the best way to glue these tiny tabs? Do I need a toothpick or something? I know for sure that it cannot be done with just the glue stick, but as a papercraft newdyke I'm not sure how to do it properly.

Also, sticky this topic already, mods!
>> Anonymous
>>204027
I never build that craft so I can't really help specifically for that one (I only remember a few pics and nothing else, I don't even know how it's template is).
But for small tabs you could go with a toothpick or a tweezer. I think the second one is better
>> Anonymous
Question: What surface do you use when you use the knife to cut out the template?

I'm worried about it cutting through and damaging my table.

for small tabs it's best to have a really nice set of tweezers on hand.
A really good set will have sharp tips that make it easy to connect two tight areas together.
I personally use a set of revlon cosmetic tweezers.
>>204102
a self healing cutting mat works wonders.
you can find a decent sized one (8.5x10 or 11) at wal-mart or almost any hobby shop for around 10-15 bucks. These absorb any cutting force and prevent the blade from going through, while providing a nice work surface.

What program do I use to open .lzh files?
Also where can I get WinRAR free and safely?
>> Anonymous
>>204432
as far as I know, winrar can open .lzh files without a problem
and just grab it on their website
it's not like you can't use it after 30 days of trial
if that "buy license" window really bothers you, just extract the files with the right-click tab
if extracting the the right-click tab is too troublesome for you, just download 7zip and you'll be fine
