Well have you ever considered taking a course in Japanese? It's actually a really easy language (writing kanji aside); much simpler than English. With one semester, you'd have enough foundation that, along with a dictionary, you'd be able to translate those lines easily.

Not unless they teach you plain form the first sememster, which is what the instructions are written in. They usually teach you polite form first.
And I think he'd have a hard time looking up kanji if he didn't know the pronunciation of them.
