Strengthening.. Anonymous
Tell me, /po/, what do you think about putting this in the base of the m41-a magazine?. Is there some other (dark magic) way I dont know about to build more resistant papercrafts?..

Thx..

Asides from making some structures inside the model, you can use thicker paper and/or coat it when you're done in some sort of plastic resin.

I don't have access to plastic resin so I like to cover the inside of the model with a thinnish layer of wood glue and let it set.

internal formers are always a good idea to strengthen a model, it's what they use on airplane models. You might want to take what you have already and glue them to cereal box cardboard though, it looks pretty flimsy as is.

After NOT doing that for mine, I would highly suggest doing that because mine doesn't go in all the way. I also suggest making it with 110 paper which is what I'm going to try next. I made it with 20lb paper and it was way to flimsy

Many thanks, guyz

Woodglue works well, but if you don't want to wait for a day for it to dry, carefully use super glue. BUT DO NOT USE THE KIND WITH THE BRUSH! I tried that shit and it dried to quick and bled through the paper too much. Just get a regular squeeze tube of KrazyGlue and use it liberally.

For large flaps where you need time to align properly i use Eileen's quick dry tacky glue(wal-mart silver bottle) and for smaller flaps or butt-gluing(no flaps) i use A gel based super glue(won't soak into paper)or just for general strengthening, where your former and model contact inside for example.

as others have said, use thicker cardstock. I use 200gsm for all my models and they are strong enough for my tastes but still easy to use.

Thx again..

I'm not in a hurry to finish my models, but I found myself wishing for the glue to dry faster, usually with tiny parts and small flaps.. I'm using Uhu stick for now, but one day, I will 'do it like the pros'.. :)

>>195219The only thing that disturb me is the thickness of the paper. The thicker it is, the harder it is to respect some dimensions.. or am I wrong on that?!..

Endo rifle magazine, 110gsm paper.
Seems strong enough with two internal pieces near center. Other two pieces in front just 'as planned'..

M41-a rifle (aliens..) magazine, 110gsm paper with internal former.. As I plan to make a modified/detailed version of it, it is resistant enough for now..

Last 'project': the marine cannon, 160gsm
(I used salmon color sheets for the display stand)
Although the paper is heavier, it needs some extra pieces to strenghten it.. and a protection layer too.

Thanks all for your great advices..

hey guys i was passing by and noticed this thread.. it's kind of sad that jan rurk owner of aliens papercraft website have been alone building all those amazing papercraft models i mean c'mon guys the endo rifle and the pulse rifle and not even mention the marine cannon are absolutly KICK ASS.. does /po/ would consider to donate for the cause?

would you?

What Jan lacks the most is time.. Would help if some people help him with 3D drawings, texturing, unfolding, testing...

.. and managing the website too..

the difference is tiny, un-noticable. Standard A4 paper in australia(where i am) is 100gsm, and the 200gsm isnt much thicker but a hell of alot stronger
>> Anonymous
Standard a4 copy paper stuff most people feed into their printers is 80gsm. Hell of a difference to 200gsm.

would somebody be able to construct plans for internal formers for the M41-a rifle and starcraft gun.

Would it be best to stick the templates on to cearal boxes instead?

Standard reflex paper you buy at Big W in reams is 80gsm. They make a 'premium' one that is 90 gsm for the same price as 80gsm but it's half a ream.

Shitsux.

last normal a4 paper i got was at office works and it was 100gsm. Thats where i got my value from. I honestly dont find a problem with using 200gsm stuff. Mind you i havnt made anything with my new bunch i got. The previous card i used was as far as i could tell 200gsm but i didnt buy it, just found it round the house so couldnt check for sure. I know it was a hell of alot stronger then 100gsm. Opened a packet at office works and checked :P. The 200gsm feels about right. I normally size up my models to as big as they can be though so that might also be a factor

To make internal formers plans, we have to define what paper has to be used to construct the model. Thickness is different for 80gsm or 160gsm or other..

I noticed on Jan's site for the aliens rifle he says to print at 90-95% for a true 1:1 scale. Would this fit on US letter size Card?
I want to build this and the starcraft cannon but finding A4 size card stock is 100% impossible where I live.

When printing on A4 sized paper, there's like a 1cm margin all around. Printing at 90-95% on letter doesn't seem to be a problem to me.
Just try 95% on regular paper, no 'ajust to paper size'..

Thanks for the tip Freddy. Much appreciated.

>>195849
wait, hold up. Are you saying that printing on regular letter sized sheets at 95% is the same as printing on A4 sheets?
>> Freddy-Z !!UL0ADjcs8KR
>>195908
Nope. Not at all. If anon_195737 wants to build some Aliens website guns at 90-95% like specified, there should not be a problem, no cut pieces.
The main point is to de-activate the 'auto adjust' feature in print options.
Second point is to do some printing on regular paper (monochrome/black, draft) to check for problems..

.. and sorry, english not my 'preferred' language.. :)
