Origami A.r. !!1J3JRobqN2a
There's too much papercraft on this board and hardly any origami. I find this disheartening. So ITT, we post origami. Can be discussion, pics, diagrams, questions, etc. Just no papercraft, because it takes up at least 90% of the board most of the time anyway. Nothing against papercraft, it's just not my thing and I want to see some origami on this board at least once in a while. Starting us off with a picture of my Mews (that you all have probably seen before but whatever. I don't have that many pics of my origami saved on this computer :/).

Bumping with Kawasaki's Fox, as folded by me. Most of the comments I got for it on dA were about how insanely cute it is. It's folded from a 1:3 rectangle (AKA you divide and cut square in thirds and fold from the resulting rectangles) and diagrams can be found in Origami for the Connoisseur.

This is the simple Mew I mentioned in couple other threads. The head was inspired by the Mew head in the not so great English Pokemon origami book, and the body was inspired by the animal bodies in Playful Origami (I believe that was the book, though I'm not completely sure). It was designed before the more complex Mews in first pic, and doesn't look that great without the features drawn on. Purists obviously won't like it because of that and the fact that it's folded from two squares that must be glued together. However, I do plan to make diagrams because it's the perfect kind of model for origami beginners and children who love Pokemon! :)

i fully agree with you about the lack of origami. lets work to change that, shall we?

Diagrams are in the Japanese Works of Satoshi Kamiya book, avalible to buy on various sites (though I used to have some of the diagrams from it, including the dragon, that I downloaded from Rapidshare. Sadly, I was stupid and they got deleted :[). Be warned, it's 200+ steps and you have to use fairly large paper, preferable foil-backed paper, to fold it somewhat nicely. I never tried to fold it, not too much for super complex models myself. Have a pic of my Simple Hissing Cockroaches :)

rapidshares says this is the ancient dragon diagrams. dunno if it works or not. otherwise search torrent sites for satoshi kamiya.

dragon was made from 3 foot square paper over 15 hours or so. fun fold.

Agreed. Papercraft is for no-talent failures. This board needs much moar origami.
>> Anonymous
>>62649

GTFO then.

Both must be created, unless you develop and create your own original designs of papercraft or origami, you have no talent.

You couldn't create your own origami diagrams yourself I bet, so what is it about having to follow baby steps laid out by other origami creators that makes you any better than someone into papercrafting?
>> Anonymous
>>62658

DIAF.

Let me see you make Kamiya's dragon. Its 300 or so steps followed by a couple of hours worth of shaping to get a finished model. If you can do that, you can say papercraft is on the same level as origami.

Hell three people here have posted works either originally created or reverse engineered from a picture (the koi). That means theres more talent here than the rest of the board combined. Either post your own original origami or stfu and diaf.

/po/ needs more content and less beggars =(

Here's an old thing of mine. It's a sailing yacht, designed to be folded from blue/white foil/paper, so that you'd see its reflection in the water (along with a wake behind).

Oh come on guys and gals, no need to fight here! This board is for both papercraft AND origami, not for mocking someone who only builds or creates one or the other. I myself have never designed anything myself, but do fold origami AND build papercraft models. So what am I then? A double-idiot?

I agree that /po/ is mostly full of the p-part, but who cares? If o-people want more of just o, then they should just put up more threads and contribute more into conversation about diagrams and designs.

But if you have to be an arse and can't play nicely with the other kids, the gtfo, think about your attitude, and then come back to share your views.

Thanks for this great origami thread btw! I'm starting on the Chocobo-thing today after finishing a papercraft last night - can't wait to see how it turns out!

Diagrams dont exist yet. Either wait for the creator to make em, or give me an incentive to make diagrams. =\ I'm lazy, what can I say. Or try it yourself, its not that difficult to reverse engineer and half the fun is in the discovery of making it.

Tentadan magazine scans or Kamiya's Ryu Zin cp would be great motivation to make diagrams though. Scans of other superadvanced model diagrams/CPs would work too =D

Guys, guys! Stop fighting already! While I myself am not much for papercraft, I still respect those who make it! My thoughts on the matter are that papercraft requires much more patience rather than talent, because unless you make your own models, all you're doing is building what someone else has designed as the instructions say. Still, patience itself could be considered a talent, since most people (especially me) don't have to patience to spend 2 months cutting out 60+ pages worth of parts to build Shinji's Eva.

Origami, on the other hand, requires a bit more talent than patience (though some models, especially the super complex ones, will push the patience of a lazy person like me). Even if you're following diagrams to fold someone else's model, many of us fairly experienced paperfolders will fold the model at least slightly differently to suit our own tastes. Doing that requires some knowledge about different folds and techniques, not to mention the fact that many of us also try to memorize various models.

tl;dr, Papercraft is more about Godlike patience, origami is more about memory and creativity. Have my rendition of Kasahara's Adam and Eve.

Ooooh. I like Kawasaki's Fox. I'll have to remember to get a better collection of his and Maekawa's diagrammed works sometime. Does anyone know of some books out there in English that have origami mostly from one or both of these guys?

I don't know about others who do both papercraft and origami, but I know that I don't post much origami stuff for two reasons. One is that most of the origami diagrams I use are from books I own and it is therefore time consuming to scan and share them. The other reason is that I tend to see more requests for please help me with finished pictures more on the papercraft threads, because it's possible to tell what you're doing wrong from a finished papercraft model, while it's next to impossible on origami. The math that gets involved with origami translates into the real world as being something that is made from one page can become really difficult to reverse engineer.

Whenever I get around to making the stands for a bunch of the origami chocobos I've made, I'll try to make a mental note to take pictures of them.

>>62918

Ooo, nice rabbit! Is that the one in Montroll's book or did you design that yourself?

Regarding reverse engineering, dollar folds are relatively easy to reverse engineer since they are relatively simple and have landmarks in the design of the dollar that are useful in figuring proportions.

It would be nice if we could increase the number of people who can read and fold crease patterns though. If crease patterns were more commonly used it would be easier to share models.

Unfortunately, I really can't fold from crease patterns. Too much precreasing and box pleating for a lazy, impatient person like me. Have a Satoshi Kamiya Kirin I folded from notebook paper last year at school.

Origami for the Connoisseur by Kunihiko Kasahara and Toshie Takahama. It's got a bunch of great old Maekawa and Kawasaki.

Also, Viva! Origami (Loooong out of print) was just about all Maekawa. And Kawasaki has a few books (Origami Dream World; Origami, Roses, and Math; etc.)

I love folding from crease patterns. But I hate box-pleating, which is sadly making a huge comeback of late.

Oh well. Been meaning to try to fold from a simple, non-box pleated CP. Any suggestion?
>> Jen
>>62932

The picture comes from an origami thread two weeks ago that was about dollar origami diagrams, because they make nice tips. I've just started to try folding from CP, and I'm finding that I'm less of a screw up at it than I was the last time I tried. It probably helped that I'm familiar with the CP creators work.

>>62970

Thanks for the information on the books. I'll definitely get Origami for the Conoisseur, since it's already been on the list of desirables for awhile, and keep my eyes open for a used copy of Viva Origami! while I'm at it. I've known about Kawasaki's roses ever since I started doing origami as a kid. I looked at the diagrams once, and decided that it would take a few years before I understood origami well enough to do one.

>>62934

Tell me where you want more in depth instructions and I'll try to help. There's one reworking of the legs that I was going to post awhile back, but life intervened. I think I still have the pictures somewhere on my computer, but I don't remember where exactly.

wow, let me just tell you... all this talk about "CP"

I know in /po/ it's a crease pattern..

How many of y'all are members of the Origami Forum?

I know you are Android Raptor...

There should be some pretty decent advice there on easy CPs and how to learn to fold them. I will tell you that my first CP was Satoshi Kamiya's Jackalope ( http://www.folders.jp/g/2001/0104.html ), and my second was his Phoenix ( http://www.folders.jp/g/2002/0222.html ).

/b/ was my favorite place to go for 2 years. A friend told me about 4chan and /b/ when I was really sick and having to sit out a semester of college. What little outside contact I had usually came from my parents forcing me to go to church with them. The conversation was usually along the lines of assuring yet another person that I was okay. Before then, when I was in the hospital, one of the things on the long list of what I couldn't eat was whole wheat. My parents kept having me take the whole wheat hosts from the chaplain even after they were told this. It probably didn't help that the Lortab they were giving me for pain was making me really paranoid.

So my friend, seeing that I was going somewhat insane when I was at home sent me to /b/ to have some kind of normal human contact. /b/ kept me sane.

In addition to cp, .pdo files is also a lot of fun to read, thanks to /b/.

It's hard to describe. From the looks of it you're pleating and swiveling the point, if that helps.
