You can use a model ripped from a game as a starting point, or from Google 3D Warehouse, Turbosquid, or from one of the countless other places on the interwebs, or you can make one from scratch, or you can use special software for making standard characters recognizable as game characters, there are countless of ways. And I think they're all fine. In the end, it doesn't really matter what you start of with, they can all be used in Pepakura to get great results, as long as you don't skip the preperation.
