eco tape? anonymous
I'm looking for someplace in the states that would sell the type of strapping used on this site: http://atelier.woman.excite.co.jp/creation/1089.html

I have so far been completely unable to find it, and I have no idea what a suitable English synonym would be for it.

Picture entirely related.

So what exactly is this stuff? Some kind of formed wood "tape," or paper/cardstock that's printed with a wooden pattern? Babelfish says "echo craft tape," but that didn't really help.

OP here.

That's exactly why I posted it. I have no idea what it is.
From what I understand, it's kind of like plastic box strapping, but it's not plastic. You can tear it length-wise (with the "grain") but it's pretty strong across the grain. It's also stiff, yet foldable. I'm guessing it's some kind of recycled paper-based strapping, from the name "eco craft tape". Also note, it is not "tape" by the english standard. It has no self-adhesive.

Any other info that anonymous can provide would be greatly appreciated.

A search for 'wood tape' turns up something that might fit. It's wood edge tape, and it's actually meant to finish edges in home improvement projects. There's a heat-sensitive adhesive on the back of most of them. Might be too thick to be what's in the pic though. It's hard for me to tell. I don't know if it's double-sided either.

I can only suggest checking out home improvement stores.

Awesome. I think something like the "wood tape" edgebanding might work.

Thanks Anon!

manufacturingfag here. what you describe sounds like the stuff we use to strap stuff down onto pallets for shipping. has a weave, will strip into smaller widths lengthwise, super strong in tension, available here only in black (have seen clear, white and red), thrown away by the pound when pallets are unwrapped.

check with industrial shipping suppliers, maybe 3M, or you local place that has shipping/receiving department.

Hope this info has helped you...

I hadn't even thought of that. I don't think I've ever seen of a wood print of that stuff though. On the other hand, searching turned up wood print packaging tape, so I guess ya never know...

Dunno of the actual product shown, but you'd best look for something under "caning" supplies. That's what the process of weaving various things into furniture as shown is called. The wood edge banding shown above is a nice suggestion, but I don't think it would be up to the stresses involved in a chair. There are many other types of canning supplies including hemp, rope, reeds, plastic, nylon and many other materials that are good in tension.
