Is it possible to rip models off of DVDs? I'm curious if it's possible to get the model of Optimus Primal from the DVDs of the show, and tweak it in pepakura to make a papercraft of him.

Probably not, but I'm just looking to see what /po/ thinks of the prospect.

wow

No,it's not possible to rip 3d files off of video footage.
You can however take snapshots of the footage and try to recreate it.

Yeah probably. But I'm too lazy to look for the ISO, and to do all the shit to rip it and design it. I was just wondering if it was possible.

when things are made with CGI or whatever for movies, it's all rendered so it's just a movie and all flat and 2d, so no models would be kept on the DVD

Models are not kept on the DVD, true.

However with 2-D shots from different angles it is possible to recreate a 3-D model.

I have done it using Auto-Cad or similar programs. ^_^

I have a very hard time believing that method can actually produce quality 3D models...
However, if you have proof it works well enough, then please; do post an example of your work.

Here is an example of my work.

I took some 2-D screens, used photoshop to remove background, inserted them as a reference in a 3-D solids modeling program (Rhino 3-D) and then traced, extruded, and extrapolated 3-D model where the extrudes intersected.

thnx.

Well It was definitely an unfinished very rough-cut project, I did quite a few others using the same technique though.

Hell I even made models of things using google image searches.

seriously though, the example is more then sufficient to make papercraft out of...
