Hey, guys.

I saw a woman get hit by a bus this afternoon and took a couple of pictures.

Technically, they are crap. I'm a newbie with a point and shoot and the folks around me were a bit hostile to photos being taken.

How do you go about taking effective photos of accident scenes and dealing with onlookers?

Tell em you're planning on submitting them to the police?
Don't do it if you're a n00b though because you'll be a lot more intrusive.

Don't smile or grin.

It helps to have a large dSLR of some sort. A couple weeks ago, a small plane crashed into a house a few blocks from a show I was shooting, so my friends and I went over there to check it out. I had my Mark III and I just kept taking pictures. Nobody asked any questions.

Also, don't look around to see if you're pissing people off or anything. Just act like you're supposed to be there and ignore everyone else. If you act like you shouldn't be there, people will pick up on it.

I agree, any SLR + an attitude that makes you look like you're supposed to be there is much more than enough to convince people to ignore what you're doing.

A fake laminated press pass would help too ;)

OP here. I sure as hell didn't get any enjoyment out of the situation. I really hope the majority of the stuff in that vein was sarcasm. I'm not convinced the person was alive when the EMTs took her away.

I was actually going to see about contributing the photos to a newspaper if any turned out decently. Unfortunately, none really did. I know I would've been a lot more comfortable with a DSLR.

I agree. Big camera with bigass lens (I carry Canon EOS 350D with battery pack and Tamron 28-70mm, 64mm dia) and an attitude make you pro in the eyes of everyone, be it an accident site or your little daughter's school play.
