So I'm thinking of purchasing a film SLR. I'm somewhat new to photography and currently only own a digital. Right now, I'm thinking of buying an older camera, like a Pentax K 1000. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

When you absolutely, positively, have to photograph every single motherfucker in the room; accept no substitute.

Whoa, they manufactured that from 1976 to 1997!

if you get a nikon you can use the lenses on your digital nikon as well

His digital Nikon, eh?

I'm guessing that you meant that he could get a manual film Nikon and then later upgrade to a Nikon dSLR. However, the same is true with the Pentax. Pentax K-mount lenses work on Pentax dSLRs, too.

shit, what kind of fucking retard would buy a pentax dslr?

Nikon have the worst backward compatibility of all the major camera brands

sup canon fd mount

One could easily make the argument that they have the best, too.

I.e., yeah, there's a huge lens compatibility chart, but really old lenses will still mount and be more or less usable on the latest cameras. As opposed to Canon, for which every lens works fine until you hit a wall around 1987 or so where they switched from FD to EF.

i own a pentax k10d. it kicks ass in its category.
nothing comes close. the 16-50 2.8 DA* is a sweet, sweet piece of glass.

Canon. All EOS mounts. Do not accept EF-S. Film, digital crop and full frame.

Don't get a K1000; they're famous and legendary because, like the AK-47 someone compared them to, there's just a bunch of them out there and they're capable, not because of anything exceptional about them. They were Pentax's bottom-basement model, and so pretty much every single photographer who went to photo-school during a certain time learned on one.

Pentax made other, similar cameras with more features: the KM, one step up, a few others, and the K2, the best model. These can all be had for even cheaper than a K1000, because they've no legend about them and no rich old pros buy them for nostalgia. It's like if the 1Ds Mk. III went for less than the Digital Rebel.

K1000 is overrated. Get the MX.

A challenger appears!

I really want one of these, but I don't know if anyone even makes 110 film anymore, much less develops it.
>> Anonymous
>>82670

walmart sells and develops the film. ive wanted one of those too, for the lulz.

110 film is still made, I saw some within the last month. (I BELIEVE it was here in Austin, Texas, but it could have been while I was in Palm Bay, Florida-- where ever it was, I think it was in a big chain store like CVS or Walgreens, so I assume it's available everywhere in the US).

Also last year a couple of friends worked in a WalMart photolab and someone brought them 110 film to develop. They couldn't develop it there at the store (didn't have the equipment), but they sent it out to a lab and it was developed within 4 days. So, it looks like it IS still possible to get 110 developed.

Whereas 126 is almost dead I think. :(

amuslingly enough though, the walmar mailers say that theyll develop 126

don't be fooled. the k1000 just works. and barely at that. the ones left of the used market are generally so beat up that they barely have any life left in them. the reason you see so many is because schools bought tons of them, not because they're awesome, but because they're cheap and last long.

you're better off buying a nikon. when it comes to film slrs, there really is nothing better on the market.

nikon f3s and f4s can be found for under $200 in great shape and both are tanks of cameras and have awesome features. you can downgrade a bit and go for an n/f90 or fa and still get a way better camera than a k1000. even better yet, check out the fm/fe series of cameras, they're all fantastic.

also, to the guy who says that nikon backwards compatibility is the worst, he clearly hasnt the faintest fucking clue. every nikon camera ever, works with every nikon lens ever. there are cases where certain technological issues make camera control funny (lenses with no aperture rings, afs, AI/AI-S) but these are few and far between. personally, i use the same set of lenses for my nikon f3, fe, fa, f4, d200 and d2xs. they all work back and forth!

heres the deal. if you want one lens system for your film and digital equipment, nikon is the only answer. if you're looking for high end glass in the digital range, then nikon and canon will produce. if you know you want to stick with a canon digital system, then pick up a used complete film system as cheap as possible.

personally, i think if you're going to go the latter route an olympus would be the best choice of the bunch. i have worlds of respect for the om series of cameras.

konicas, minoltas, fujis, pentax, and canon film slrs, generally speaking, are ugly, heavy, and technically inferior.

You make some pretty big, and false, claims there.

>>every nikon camera ever, works with every nikon lens ever.

Come on, seriously? Only Pentax can make this claim, and even then you need an adapter for M42s.

>>konicas, minoltas, fujis, pentax, and canon film slrs, generally speaking, are ugly, heavy, and technically inferior.

If I didn't think you were incredibly biased beforehand, this made it blatantly obvious.

i love mr rockwell, but please, don't ever quote him, ever. it's just stupid.

here's what it comes down to. nikon was the leader in the 35mm slr technology ever since the first F camera. nothing else is worth considering. you can get them cheap and in good condition. why look at anything else?

can you honestly tell me that there are better cameras on the market than anything in the F line? nothing even begins to approach the build quality, feature list, or lifespan of film nikons.

Dear all other Canonfags:

Please do not feed this extremely obvious troll.

Thanks.
>> Anonymous
you guys are the bigger trolls if you don't think i'm some baseless nikon freak.

all the systems have their merits and i'll be the first to say there aren't at least a dozen pieces of canon glass i'd give a foot for.

i simply, and firmly, believe that nikon owns the film slr catagory. rangefinders, digital slrs, compact cameras, thats all up in the air.

You act like the K1000 is expensive or something. You can get them for 50 bucks with a lens and flash on ebay.
>> Anonymous
the k1000 is not expensive or hard to find. i just think you have a lot of better options.
>> Anonymous
>>82774
Not me, but I agree with what he said.

KEH shows a K1000 in BGN condition going for 76, and a K2 in BGN going for 72. The difference increases as condition goes up, still in favor of the other models.

OP here.

The posts have been very helpful so far and I've checked out a couple of the models mentioned made by Nikon. While they seem like great cameras ( I liked the F3 a lot) they are also pretty damn expensive. The main reason I wanted to buy a Pentax, as I should have stated above, was because it was decent as well as cheap.

So, if anyone could suggest any cheaper cameras, that'd be nice. Right now, I'm going to look into the Pentax MX, and K series. Thanks guys.

I'm a really big fan of the Minolta SR-T series. They're similar to the K1000 and other cameras of that vintage. Nothing nowadays uses the same lenses, which is both a blessing and a curse--it means that you won't be able to use lenses from it on a digital SLR in the future, but it also means you can pick up a 50mm f/1.4 for about $20 if you look hard enough.

Also, they're really cheap. I got my SR-T SC II for $30 with a 50mm f/2.0

I swear by my Nikon FM2n. it's rather heavy which makes for less shaky pictures, shoots well and stands up to my abuse. The meter runs on two button batteries but the camera as a whole can function without it. and will still shoot in extreme cold. I can use my parents' lenses from the 70s too.

My dad used to be a professional photographer, and he passed down his old Nikon FE to me. I recently got a D70s, so I don't use it anymore, but it was my main camera for a good 3 years. Its a nice reliable camera and accepts most nikon lenses.
