50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM Anonymous
Sigma bolsters its top-end EX range with the announcement of a HSM focusing-motor-equipped 50mm f/1.4 lens. Offering a moderate telephoto field of view on APS-C cameras, Sigma's DG designation means it will also work as a standard lens on full-frame digital cameras. We believe this is the first time a 50mm f/1.4 lens has been offered with a ring-type focus motor. Pricing and availability information to follow as soon as we have it.

Actually there does seem to be some major improvements for not only speed but accuracy for AF in HSM / AF-S lenses.
30mm f1.4 for example doesn't hunt NEARLY as much as Sigma's 24mm f1.8, or Nikon's 50mm f1.8

My experiences are on a D50 BTW

$200 is cheap for a lens that's better than most of the L lenses, just without weathersealing.

>>142836
It might have more to do with the overall age of the lens design, not the motor. Newer lens = better circuitry. I don't see why the motor would make it hunt or not, either.

IF it is $200

their 30/1.4 is like, $420 so probably $300

fuck and I just bought the 30/1.4.

$309.95 on B&H.

It's a great lens available insanely cheaply for its quality.

i have to say that this is fuckin awesome.

sure ive already got a canon 50 1.4 but seeing how this goes i may have a full sigma lens lineup on a canon body lol :D

Disregard, I suck cocks and thought you were talking about Canon's 50/1.4.

I think this new Sigma is pretty much a bone being thrown to D40 users, but we'll see how it performs when people start using it.

To be fair, i sincerely doubt Sigma will have any problems. I'm just glad cause this will surely give Nikon a kick in the arse.

Makes no difference for me since i have a 50mm 1.4D with camera that have a motor... but this lens will help whinging D40 users and non users alike.

If they fuck up a 50mm fixed focal length lens... then they might as well kill themselves.

I read this on the website :
"* If the camera body does not support HSM motor, AF does not work."

What camera can't? I'm confused here.

The N90(NOT s) and older AF bodies on nikon can't.
They added moar pins to the inner mount to support af-s lenses. N90s and newer are fine.

i'm assuming the F90x is the same

yep, non-usa branding

The problem with F90X is that you need aperture ring in lens for it to work.

Only way to override that is to shoot always in exposure priority.

G type lenses will work, but only in P or S mode

People are doubting this lens already because the 30 f/1.4 is so fucking soft wide open, but bear in mind one important distinction... this is a 50mm prime. Every camera company to ever make a 50 prime has made a FINE lens. It's not a hard design. I think this will probably be a pretty awesome lens, and great for the D40/D60 people out there, until Nikon gets their shit together and revamps their primes.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
The more the merrier, I say. This could be quite a nice lens. As heavyweather pointed out already most manufacturers have a nice 50mm in the line up, so this shouldn't be too bad. I look forward to the reviews and user samples.

Yeah, but program ae on the n90s is actually pretty good. P* is "flexible," and ev comp is easy to do. Not a super big issue unless you have finger dexterity problems.

This is true. But there's also the point that the bar for 50mm lenses is set awfully high for just that reason.

Also, I honestly don't think there are any new objectively bad lens designs; I don't think it's even possible unless someone is trying to screw up. Even the old Canon kit lens had enough resolution for most purposes. I meant on a subjective level. There's plenty of lenses out there with mediocre or bad bokeh, for instance.

this lens is kicking ass and taking names before it's even out

FUCK YEAH

If this is anything like the 30mm, it will be EPIC WIN.

It's not even because the design is simple. The Planar formula (which pretty much every post-1950 50mm is) was designed by the turn of the century, and once good enough coatings were invented to make it possible, it's been mass produced and refined for ages.

Does copyright apply for lens formulas? I'm guessing no, which allows pretty much every 50/1.4 to have the same (awesome) formula.

>>143616
First it would be under a patent not copyright, second patents only retain exclusive rights for 20 years, after that the design is fair game.

maybe at the borders

center is DEAD ON at 1.4

Don't get butthurt just because someone mentions a flaw in your lens. It's f/1.4. Only some Leica designs and the f/1.2 Nikkors are at their best close to wide open. And if you think for a minute, that means they get raped by diffraction if they're stopped down.

They're tradeoffs. Get used to it.

LOL

i don't need the 30mm because i have a 5D and can use a 50mm as 50mm

don't get butthurt because a cheap lens performs stellar
