*cough*
Well, I am only 16 and am not even out of high school yet, but I've been trying my hand at black and white film photography for about a year now.
I have been taking a few courses at my local JC [nothing special]
I was wondering what /p/ might think of my photography?

I really need feedback and my friends are too immature to give me anything constructive, other than "this sucks" or "this rocks".

Greatly appreciated.
[Keep in mind that these photographs are scanned into my computer, so the quality is not very good. These prints were developed BY ME in the junior college dark room and have not been put through photoshop.]

brb lemme get the popcorn

we dont need to see the huge resolution and ill tell you why.
1) 4chan's servers arent exactly the best and fastest, and i dont really want to wait that long to see a huge photo that
2) gets resized by my browser so it looks like ass.
or 3) if i dont resize it i have to scroll all around to see the photo, making it harder to take it all in at once.

my bad
noob to 4chan, so if I mess up....

p.s. the photo is boring. there is nothing that catches my eye at all. nothing in the frame is interesting.

YOU DON'T LIKE HIS MOTHER'S CAT? THIS IS SURPRISING. Wait, no it isn't.

Resize, take pictures of something someone else will find interesting, lurk the fuck moar, get friends that share your interest in photography.

Send us more photos, troll.

Otherwise, at least you managed to catch a good moment in this photo.

HOLD UP /p/!

I am a noob to computers, basically.

I am having a friend help me resize the photographs so, calm the fuck down!

and yes, this isn't my best photograph.

[Of course, none of them may be any good, but I'm trying]

1. I like cats, so I went "awwww!" when I opened it, but if somebody doesn't it would be a very boring picture.
2. Too contrasty.
3. If you scan film, running it through Photoshop is usually needed to "match the scan to the print," i.e. to get it to look like you want it to, because scanners aren't perfect. That could help with #2. Or you could've just chosen an unsuitable film. Or developed it wonky. Or some mix of the three.
4. No one cares that you develop your own film. It's cool that you know it, but it's understood that if someone shoots B&W film they know how to do it themselves and usually do.

As a counterpoint, Henri Cartier-Bresson hated working in the darkroom. He never printed his own stuff, and only developed it himself when he was on the other side of the world from his lab and had no choice.
5. Out of curiosity, "EXIF data," please.

You really have to start looking at things differently when you are finding things to photograph. You also have to realize that just because something is in black and white doesn't mean it's going to be good/artsy. Look for interesting shapes, contrasts, shadows, etc. Try shooting a roll entirely of fruit, or shoes, or hats, or doors. Just play with stuff.

Try looking at famous photos, or other photos by real photographers, and start from there. I'm not saying to plagiarize their works, of course, but it's OK if your first few attempts are somewhat derivative.

Cats are also pretty fucking difficult to photograph, since they are so fidgety.

Additionally, I agree with>>180870re: fixing the scanning differences. Photoshop is excellent for doing stuff like that.

1. Glad you do.
2. & 4. My point in telling /p/ that I had developed these pictures/enlarged them myself, was that there are many imperfections, like the contrast. And yes, I guess I could put them through photoshop, but, as I'm pretty sure most of you can tell by now, I am not very good at photoshop either. Which means i will just have to resort to some old-fashioned "burning" in the dark room!

3. Part of it was answered above, but as for film, I am using Ilford FP4, and yes, chances are, I probably developed it "wonky" considering I have only been doing this for little less than a year.

5. Again, complete noob to anything to do with the internet, or half of my computer, so my response to that is "huh?"
>> Z.H.
and I would like to thank anon for resizing that

I'm hesitate to put any more of my stuff up, since I don't really want anon to resize it every time I do, so I will just wait till tomorrow to try this again!

Thanks to everyone who left some constructive feedback.

EXIF data is information automatically tacked onto every photograph taken with a digital camera. Things like camera, lens, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc.

Film cameras don't do that (a databack will, though) so that's why I put it in quotes.
>> Z.H.
>>180910
Oh, good to know.

Yeah, film camera, right here.
Did I forget to mention that?
My bad.
>> Anonymous
>>180913
You mentioned it, or at least very clearly implied it when you said it was film.

What lens, what aperture, etc. did you shoot this on?
>> Z.H.
>>180933
well, I seem to have trouble remembering what lens I always use [yes, I'm stupid like that]
I can tell you that my aperture was f/5.6.

I took this picture early in the morning, on my way to school. My cat just happened to be sleeping in an upside down position, and I thought it looked interesting/cute. Mainly, cute.

The sun was very bright that morning, and I am having trouble making the spots where the sunlight is less contrasty.

Mainly since I am new to the dark room, and "burning" is a skill I have not quite mastered.

If you don't want anon to resize it, don't upload such a huge image.

Again, I am completely useless when it comes to technology. Which means I have no idea how to resize them. I'll figure it out eventually.

Most of these are of my friend, since he is the only one I know who can do these things on a longboard.
