im thinking of getting a new camera.

i've narrowed it down between 2 choices.

a Canon Rebel xti 10.1mp or a Nikon D40x 10.2mp

the nikon is 694dollars and the canon is 699dollars and they both have 18-55mm lens.

what camera would be better to buy?
i'm kinda leaning towards the nikon but what is better?
>> OPFOR !8vKpfCqy8A
in b4 brand wars.

I would test out both models and see which one you like the best.
>> Anonymous
Yeah, i tried them both out at best buy i'm just kinda new to photography and plan to use one of these for a long time
>> Anonymous
I've tried both cameras out. The Canon feels a little more cheaper and easy to break but the Nikon feels better in my hand. The features on the Nikon also I feel are more easy to use than on the Canon
>> Anonymous
Use whatever you feel happiest with. There's little difference between them in the long run. Both brands follow each other closely, so personal preference is key.
>> Anonymous
Also, if the extra half frame per second isn't a big draw, you might want to consider the D40 instead of the D40x. The extra 4MP doesn't really gain you much in practice.
>> Anonymous
but doesn't the 4mp give you a better image?
>> Anonymous
>>84600
Only if you print your photos on posters.

Also, the 10MP sensor in D40X is noisier, so all that resolution difference doesn't matter when you go past ISO 800.
>> Anonymous
>>84600
If you do large size prints or crop a whole lot, it'll help, but lenses and your use of them have a whole lot more to do with the image quality than a small difference in resolution.
>> elf_man !fBgo7jDjms
>>84602
Either really large prints, or if you're one who shoots wide then crops a lot to get the composition you want, then it's more important.

in terms of the d40 over the d40x. i always say its better to have the extra mp and not need it than to need it and not have it. You may not want to print large now but you may want to in the future its also a lot easier to sell large prints.

>>84615
If you frame properly so you don't need to crop, you literally can't tell the difference between a 6mp shot and a 10mp shot at poster size. Maybe if you blow it up to billboard size and get right up close to it, but there comes a point past which throwing more pixels onto the sensor gives you some seriously diminishing returns. That point is around 5 megapixels.

I've got a 16x20 on my wall from a 5MP P&S. No matter how closely you look, you can't see pixels.

It's better to have 200 extra dollars and not need it than to need $200 and not have it, and I'd say that $200 is better spent on glass or on saving up to eventually move to a D80.

(Similarly, you might want to consider the XT instead of the XTi. That's less clear cut, though, since the XTi has some noticeable advantages over the XT other than the resolution. Color histogram, quicker-to-use menu system, mostly-lip-service-but-better-than-nothing dust eradication system, etc)

thanks for all the comments guys.
i just want this camera to last for a long time and i thought more mp would be better in the longrun for the future

The Nikon D40x is the only serious competitor to the Canon EOS 400D (XTi) here.

I have a 400D personally. It was a close call over a D40x, but I chose the former. Recently I played around with my friend's new D40x and was pretty disappointed: most of all I missed a DoF preview button and shortcuts to the ISO settings and such. The wheel doesn't work to select items in the menu, unlike the 400D. You need to confirm each selection before (half-)pressing the shutter for the setting to take effect, making actions one button press longer. Finally I found the menu of the D40x sloooow.

Another thing that didn't appeal to me is the lack of in-body autofocus motor, so the next lens I'd want to buy, a 50mm f/1.8 lens, would have to go without autofocus. As opposed to Canon.

I'm really glad I chose a 400D.

The D40x does have a better grip, however.

I was in your same position about a month ago. It came down to which one felt better in my hands, and that was the D40.

Only thing I regret about the D40 is the fact that you can only use AF-S lenses (well, at least only those for auto-focus). But at this point I'm happy just getting shots, practicing, and learning.
>> The problem with Canon... Anonymous
...is that their kit lenses are crap. I know some Nikons have good ones, dunno whether that one is the D40 or not. The lens cost to get some respectable glass on the XTi is an important consideration.

Not anti-Canon rhetoric - I love my Canon, but the lens that comes with the XTi is best used as a paperweight.

Yeah, the EF-S 18-55 that came with mine sux donkey balls. flimsy, cheapo-plastic, at full out you can wiggle the barrel.

I'm quite fond of my XTi's kit lens. I've used it to take some of my favorite pictures, especially now that I've gotten more into off-camera flash (which makes the max aperture less of an issue. I can bump it up to its ideal f/8 aperture and get some really nice results)

I had only heard bad things about the xt kit lens, but I had the option to buy it for thirty bucks the other day, and I really couldn't pass that up, so I did.

What the FUCK are you guys bitching about? This lens does more than an adequate role.

I'm going to throw some kit lens pictures I took today at you now.

Anyways, these were all taken with the kit lens on a rebel xt, handheld.

it more than serves its purpose, I'll probably carry it around quite a bit.

its about a block away towards the train line.

Kit lenses are great for day to day shooting but if you compare them to primes or high level zooms you find out on what your missing. They dont suck they just dont rock.

hey butterfly, guy that posted those pictures, also the guy who's the illustrator, also currently in japan.

And I'm not saying that the kit lenses are better than the higher quality lenses, just that they function better than most people say, and are very usable.

so your actually just agreeing totally with what i just said, AWESOME...

I've seen even better taken with the kit lens at that. It can make some very nice photos. You just need to be good enough to use it and practice your photography.

It depends a lot on what you're shooting. I pretty much live at 2.8 for portraits so the kit lens is rather unsuited. Landscape is more fogiving, and the kit lens does do an okay job when you can stop down. Action, portraits, tricky light... yeah, you gotta go beyond the kit to get what you want.

get the nikon, its got more MP so its better

>>84791
i agree the kit lens isn't as bad as ppl make it out to be, I mean it gets the job done and unless you're using your pics for something moderately serious or you're shooting in darkness without a flash its not really a big deal

I'll throw another wrench into things..

Pentax K10D. 10.2MP, 749$ and a 100$ rebate, final price 649$. bhphotovideo.com. Comes with lens. Tons of weather seals (people have put a K10D in a sink full of water and had it still work perfectly after. Not recommended, but should show you that any rain photography would be fine). Internal image stabilization, so any lens you purchase will have image stabilization (you just enter the focal length for the lens into the camera if the camera can't auto-detect it). KEH.com has a metric assload of cheap great glass. Just make sure the rating is at least EX.

16x20 is "small". i understand what your saying but what may be large for you is small for someone else.

all of you have to reject this idea that "yeah you can only tell up close with a loop...LOLZ" mentality. no really intends their work to be viewed like that.

go for the pentax k10d. fuck this nikon/canon faggotry.
