Getting into photography. (Yes, I realize that everybody posts this.) Anonymous
Hey /p/.

I'm thinking about getting into photography, and I'm really interested in the cool stuff I can do. However, I don't know where to start or have any idea how much I could end up spending. At the least, I'd like to be able to do some moderately cool things like long exposures.

Thanks for that.

Thank you for sharing your fascinating revelation.

OP here.
I just realized that I forgot to ask my question.

What kind of gear should I get? I really don't want to spend too much.

Google.com

Seriously. It's like going to /o/ and saying you're interested in driving a car and where you should start.

How about you buy a compact that lets you use M mode, take some pictures you consider to be moderately cool, show them here, ask for C/C and THEN come back asking IF and maybe WHAT dSLR you should get.

Fact: the photographer takes the picture, the camera is only a tool. You don't need a $3000 hammer to whack in a nail.

Canon Powershot A570 IS is always the answer.

Or going to /b/ and telling them you want to be a horrible person and asking what the first step is.

You're all telling him digital, why not get some film experience? it what made me love photography so much. and it can be pretty cheap to start/get a feel for.

Get a nikon f series or a pentax k100 and a few rolls of 400 asa B&W. go shooting, get it developed and see if you enjoy it.

chances are the op will get bored/frustrated when the entire first roll he shoots will be under/overexposed/blurred.

Is the Canon Powershot A620 good?
Better than the a570?
I've just discovered that I do indeed have an A620 that I could use.

Who fucking cares if it's better?
A D3/1Diii is better than a D60/450D.
Does that mean you can take better pictures? NO. It means you have more to work with, but the composition, lighting, etc are still up to you.

Get your ass off of /p/ and take pics.
Go describe your city/town in 6 photos.

If you have already have a620 then by all means use it. It lacks the image stabilisation but that's not much of an issue since you're going to be using a tripod anyway.

A620's pretty awesome. My standard pocket camera's an A95, which was the camera that begat the A610/A620..
