I got a Nikon D1 used for under $150, so I converted it to IR. Is /p/ jealous?

Not really, but enjoy it and have fun. Post here again when you have some worth while photos.

I just realized my EXIF says the lens I used is a 1.7.

Wtf. No it isn't.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>136883
my 85mm f/1.8 also says f/1.7 in the exif

>>136883

Nikon 50/1.8 (and probably 85/1.8 too) is actually a f/1.73 lens. If you set the aperture to f/1.8 and peek into the lens during exposure, you'll see that the diaphragm shrinks a bit from the fully open position. I don't know the reasoning behind this.
>> Anonymous
>>136892

f/1.73 is wider than f/1.8... So it shouldn't be shrinking. Bizarre none-the-less. I'll bet that throws off perfect exposure a titch huh?
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>136897
he means when you set it at f/1.8, the diaphragm does close a little from f/1.73 to f/1.8.
but he's right, when you press the aperture preview at f/1.8 it does close a little on my 85mm
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>136897
also forgot to add, it wont throw off the exposure because the body knows exactly where the aperture blades are, thus it knows how to calculate what shutter to set for any given aperture. So it will know its open at f/1.73 and compensates for that (as you can see in the exif).

Maybe the images at f/1.73 would look like shit but the extra light is nice for composing and focusing.

>>136936
I tried shooting with the 50/1.8 mounted on an Olympus via adapter (=no aperture coupling) and didn't notice anything really bad when fully open.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>136937
Did you try the same shot ever-so-slightly stopped down to see if it's better?

If it's not... I got nothin'.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
hurr my 50 is a 1/7 :P

My guess would be it's just a minor incompatibiliy between lens and body. It's a cheap lens, QC is going to be lighter on it, have a little slop in the aperture blades and cover it up by having them always shoot at f/1.8 instead of f/1.73. And the difference is so minor they're not going to waste programmers and software engineers to code a few lines to let lenses like this open up all the way, even if they weren't trying to cover up slop.

Honestly OP, just making your pic B&W doesn't make your photo interesting or artistic. Learn the rules of art.

>>136956
Not OP, but STFU. I'm sick of people acting like anyone who prefers black and white for their work is some DA whore.

Besides, it's infrared. A color infrared portrait would probably look weird as hell.

>>136961anyone who prefers black and white for their work is some DA whore.

But he has a point, they usually are. And it's not a bad point to stick to. If the picture isn't interesting on its own, making it black and white won't suddenly make it interesting. I don't see what you're getting angry at, it's good advice.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>136976
Sometimes it does. E.g., a picture with great lighting and texture and ugly-ass distracting colors.

The problem isn't black and white, it's with people who think that all that's needed to make a picture into Art is the 'Desaturate' command.

(That being said: In the particular case of the OP picture, it's a boring shot made no less boring by the fact that it was taken with an infrared camera.

And yes, I'm jealous. But my point stands.)

digital IR is gay

but then again even though film IR kicks ass it's a fucking pain the ass

There's plenty of photographers (myself included) who typically work in black and white for aesthetic and stylistic reasons, not because it's OMG INSTA-ART. I honestly run a quick channel mixer conversion on casual snapshots just 'cause it's almost a mentally automatic part of my workflow, and I don't pass those off as big masterpieces that ought to be thrown next to Koudelka and Cartier-Bresson. I don't pass anything I do off as big masterpieces that ought to be thrown next to Koudelka and Cartier-Bresson.

I've seen color infrared landscapes, like that, but never a portrait. I figured there was probably some reason for that. I'd like to see one, anyway.

How do I focused on an IR camera?
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
>>137116
with a film you kinda make a good guess

there's a number adjustment you make for the actual distance from the camera the subject is to the distance displayed on the lens. Translation: Don't do film IR with new cameras.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>137116
By pressing the shutter down...

Unless you have a filter on the front of the camera, in which case AF will not work. My camera has the IR filter installed directly in front of the sensor. If you have a clear pass filter there (And therefore need to add your own IR filter in front of the lens), then AF will not work for you.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
btw dont fucking get the cokin p series infrared filter

have had nothing but problems with it
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>137120
It'll work, it'll just be slightly off. If you're lucky enough to have a lens with IR adjustment dot, you can AF then switch to manual focus and adjust it.

If you don't have a lens made with IR in mind, your best bet is to either guess wildly at how to adjust it or just clench up your aperture so more of your subject is in your in-focus field.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>137123
Depends on the lens, lifepixel does some sort of tweaking to the AF, which seems to have fixed focusing on 90% of my lenses, to VERY close if not dead on.

Lenses that work well
30mm f1.4
50mm f1.4
85mm f1.8
80-200 af-s
50-500 hsm
15mm f2.8 fisheye

Not so well
10-20 sigma (HORRRIBLE)
24mm f1.8
18-200 sigma
