I have a Canon 30D and I'm starting to hate the fact that it's a small sensor camera. I want to get me a nice 50mm f1.4 and only just to use one prime lens for my camera but I don't want to do the math of dividing it by 1.6 in order to see what mm range I would need in order to get the same range of 50mm as i would on a small sensor so I ask you if I should go film - but I like the ease of which I'm able to see my pictures from digital cameras so different lens, camera, film or whatever?

What I have:
Canon 30D
EF-S 15-85mm f4.0/5.0
EF 70-200mm L F4.0

What I want - one prime lens such as 50mm f1.4 or f1.8 and that's all

1. Start menu.
2. Programs.
3. Accessories
4. Calculator.
5. 50/1.6
6. 31.25
7. Profit! for your pick of Canon, Sigma, Tamron, etc.

Not difficult. Don't be lazy.

Sigma 30/1.4 DC is equivalent to 48/1.4 on Canon cropped sensor bodies, which looks like a pretty good "standard" prime to me.

That's why I got Nikon! It's so much easier to calculate focal length when your crop factor is 1point5.

OP here - I'm looking at either one of them, I ask for any suggestions in regards to which one I should try to obtain. Doing so I probably will get rid of my other zoom lenses (not the 70-200mm f/4) and pay the difference.

Thoughts for EF 24mm F1.4L USM or 35mm F1.4L USM

Kneejerk advice is to go with something intermediate, like a 28.

Slightly less kneejerk advice, not knowing if there is a lens you're looking for that's a 28 or something, is to get the 24. 50mm is actually already pushing what a "normal" lens really is (~43mm), and was picked to be "normal" by the original Leica engineers because it was hard at the time to make a good lens wider than that.

Considered advice is that you'll adjust to whatever focal length you pick, and to get the lens with the optical footprint you like the best.

All three have an element of truth in them.

Thank u for the feedback, I'll look around for couple of 24 or 28mm lenses now.

Fixed.

No, 50*1.6 gives you the equivalent focal length of a 50mm lens on a 1.6x crop. 50/1.6 gives you the focal length you need to get a 50mm equivalent, which is what the OP was asking for. But too lazy to do himself.

I think you should certainly go with film to save the one off calculation you will need to do to buy the lens.
