So, /p/, christmas is coming up and perhaps I'll get myself a new lens.
I'm on a 400D / XTi, and currently have the first gen f/1.8 50mm, the thing it came with (18-55mm, f/3.5-5.6), and a really old and not-quite-compatible-with-the-camera Sigma 200mm telephoto (55-200mm, f/4-5.6).

What lenses might /p/ suggest? I'll be going trekking in Mongolia next month, so a wide angle might be a nice idea, but I also find myself using the 18-55mm so much because it's just useful to have with you, and often I can't easily carry/swap another lens.

So, suggestions?

Budget? Must haves? Are we allowed to spend the budget on one lens only?

Sub-$1000 ideally, all on one lens is fine.
Ideally something more like $600 or so, but whatever comes up.

I don't mind EF or EF-S particularly, either.

More questions:

Would you consider upgrading your current wide angle lens rather than adding another? Are there any focal lengths you feel are a must or want to add to your kit? What kind of pictures do you want to take and in what kind of conditions?

Are you happy with the image quality and performance of the lenses you have?

Ideas to get you rolling.

> Would you consider upgrading your current wide angle lens rather than adding another?
Potentially, but the lens it comes with isn't exactly brilliant quality or speed, so I'd like a somewhat better lens.

> Are there any focal lengths you feel are a must or want to add to your kit?
Decent quality at general use focal lengths would be nice, I don't know if a fairly strong wide angle would be useful for landscapes etc while I'm in Mongolia (I said next month, I meant next year for one month). Exteme wide angle is something I don't really have covered right now.
I don't find myself using the telephoto much.

> What kind of pictures do you want to take and in what kind of conditions?
I'm still not sure on the "what kind of pictures", part, but the conditions are mostly fairly standard, nothing extreme - except for this Mongolia trip, which will be interesting.

I don't mind the 18-55 too much when using it, but then I swap to my 50mm and vastly prefer both the quality and the fast aperture.
However, the 50mm on a cropped DSLR isn't really useful for much beyond portraits, I've found.

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM.

End thread.

If you are cheap:

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II

Why would you recommend this?

get the new canon 18-55 IS (image stabilized)

it costs around 200 dollars, and from the tests performed so far it kicks the pants off of most other lenses in even a fairly large ballpark range of pricing.

Because the guy said this:

"I don't mind the 18-55 too much when using it, but then I swap to my 50mm and vastly prefer both the quality and the fast aperture.

He prefers the quality, with amateurs like you and me, that means sharpenss, and speed of the 50m 1.8.

The EF-S 17-55 is both sharp and fast and has the bonus of IS.
