On flickr the uploader has the option of disabling the 'all sizes' button, and also he or she can make the original size unavailable. It's still easy to get the picture that you see on the page with one click of a button, and you can just as easily get the large version too (The large version is created by flickr when the original picture size is significantly larger then 1024 on the longest side, if I remember corectly.)

Just google 'get original size bookmarlet' or something like that. For the large version you'll have to copy and paste the bookmarklet on your toolbar and in the copy version change the url from _o to _b (I think, it's been a while since I've done it.) Then if large isn't available you can get the size that's on the page by doing the same thing again and changing the _b to _m.

Ok, this is the Idiots Guide to Downloading Original, Large, and Medium Pictures from Flickr:

1. Download and install Firefox.
2. Start Firefox.
3. Right below the address bar you will see something called the Bookmark Toolbar. It should have a couple of bookmarks there already.
4. Go to this page http://typewriting.org/2005/10/01/Flickr_Bookmarklet_Update/
5. Grab the link that says "Get Flickr Original" and move it to the bookmarks toolbar. You will now have a bookmark on the toolbar that is called "Get Flickr Original", except since it's not really a link but a bit of javascript it's called a bookmarklet.
6. Right click on the bokmarklet and in the menu that shows up chose 'copy.'
7. Right click on an empty space on the bookmarks toolbar and click on 'paste.' Now you should have two copies of that bookmarklet.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7. Now you should have three identical copies of the bookmarklet.
9. Right click on the first one and chose properties.
10. A little window will appear, in that window the first two fields will be 'name' and 'address'.
11. You should probably change the name to something shorter that will take less space on your bookmarks toolbar, like F-o (for flickr original).
12. If you renamed the bookmarklet, click 'save changes.' If you skipped step 11, just click 'cancel.'
>> Anonymous
13. Right click on the second copy of your bookmarklet, chose properties.
14. Change the 'name' field to something like f-l (or Get Flickr Large if you want a long descriptive name)
15. In the 'address' field (right below the name field) you will see a line of java script. Click on that field and move the cursor (either with arrows or your mouse) to the end of the line.
16. You will see that the line ends with "_o.jpg';" (obviously without the quotes.)
17. Change the _o to _b
18. Click 'save changes.'
19. Right click on the third copy of the bookmarklet.
20. Change the name field to "Get Flickr Medium" or "F-m" or whatever else you want.
>> Anonymous
21. In the address field go to the end of the java script line. Delete the _o part (or _b part depending on which bookmarklet you copied.)
22. Now the java script line should end with %20'.jpg';
23. Click 'save changes.'

You are done. Now to test if this works go to any flickr picture, for example this one:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tingreen/2804237526/

First click on the "get flickr original" bookmarklet. You will get a page that says picture is unavailable. You should however always try that first, as many flickr users still make the original size available.

SHIT WAS SO CASH.

If original is not aviailable, click on the 'get flickr large' (or whatever you named it.) This will work for this particular example. It doesn't always work, if the original isn't significantly larger then what the large version would be (1024 on longest side) then flickr doesn't generate the large version.

If large isn't available then all you can get is the picture size that is on the original picture page (I think it's the medium format.) Click on the third bookmarklet and it will show that size.

Obviously once you have the picture in your window you can just right click it and save it.

Let me know if this works for you.

(btw, I obviously made a mistake in my previous post, to get the medium size you need to delete the _o instead of changing it to _m.)

would you happen to know how the address is structured? meaning, how does it decide on the second part of the image's address. for example http://static.flickr.com/65/225589687_8b5756423e_o.jpg, where does the 8b575643 part come from. random?
>> Anonymous
I have nenver read anything about anyone figuring out what algorithm is used to generate the second part. It's probably random, however it is contained in the source of the page the picture is on. The java script in the bookmarklet looks for that and generates the url for direct access to the picture.

Some time ago flickr responded to user complaints and made it possible to block access to the original picture, if access is blocked the random part (if it is random) of the url is different for the original size and is not included in the page source. The urls for the other 5 versions (large, medium, small, thumbnail and square) remains the same and is still included in the source.
