best lens for taking party pictures

pic semi-related

Sigma 30mm f1.4
Just wide enough without ugly distortion on people, HSM for decent focusing, F1.4 for short DOF / low light performance, it doesn't flare, Its small and the lens hood does a good job protecting it. Can get 2 or 3 people in a picture without standing back 10 feet.
And its not that expensive

And you forgot to say it sucks on Canon mount.

Thats a good thing? Lol

Buy it NEW, then its as simple as returning bad focusing copies until you get one that works. (and this problem is blown out of proportion aswell)
We aren't talking BEST bang for your buck, its best LENS for taking party pictures.

Though if you're willing to sacrifice 2/3 of a stop, the Canon 28mm f/1.8 is a great party lens too.

well clearly you either got a dud or you dont know how to use it but mine has been wicked for the last ~year. easily rivals the canon 50 1.4 at similar apertures...

ill 2nd the vote for the sigma 30 1.4, though preferably you should use it on at least a 30D or higher for accurate AF in party lighting.

also note that the given pic has a flash used, in what looks like the "P" setting so its given a fill flash. for this sort of thing the camera will be stopped down so if your looking for shots like this you could prob get away with a fairly slow(ish) lens and the on board flash or preferably an external one with AF assist...
