So I'm looking to buy a DSLR cam...

Which is better, the Nikon D40 or the Rebel XT?

I was told that the D40 can take macro shots but the XT cannot. Is this true? The same girl said that the XT takes BETTER shots but just cannot take macro.

Whether or not a DSLR can take macro shots is determined solely by the presence of a macro lens. Tell that girl to do some research and actually try the cameras she is talking about.

It just depends on the lens regarding 'macro shots'.

Even though I'm a nikonfag, DONT GET A D40. You might as well just admit defeat.

OP here, the girl who told me that is a photographer for a local paper here in NJ. I assume she knows what she's talking about.

the answer is Sony A200

don't worry, she doesn't.

She is an idiot. Go ask on dpreview if you don't believe /p/. You'll get told the same thing. It is the lens that matters, not the camera. The girl is a liar or a moron.

She should be fired.

She doesn't. There are macro lenses for both cameras.

I personally like my Digital Rebel XTi, but the important things are the person behind the camera and the glass in front of it.

OP here. OK, so either camera can take macro shots with the right lens. Of the 2 which one is better?

Also, Sony is not an option. I want a camera not a TV.

OH LAWD LOL

Back on topic:
Go for a 40D/D80. They're fairly cheap now.

In b4 flamewar. Are we being trolled?

>>194140
seconded. How much are you planning to spend?

Both have just as good lenses.

The XT is a better investment, since it can use all of its system's lenses, while the D40 can't.

Go for the D80, but first: Buy more brain capacity

When you are purchasing your first SLR, be aware you are buying into a lens family, not a camera body. Your camera body will not be your first. On the other hand, a good lens may last you 10 years. If you are serious about this, do some research into the breadth and quality of lenses in the Canon and Nikon families.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
A100 if you can find it will probably be cheaper than anything canikon has to offer.

Who cares, you wont buy another lens and will get bored after 2 months, buy whatever you want and stop asking other people for advice. You have a mind, use it.

I know a guy who was a photo editor for a paper and claimed shop lights gave better results than any strobe system. Just because someone is a "professional" doesn't mean they know anything.

I don't agree with him at all, but that's not a really good example. Shop lights CAN provide excellent lighting if you're good with lighting to begin with.

OP here

Just wanted to troll a little. Thanks guys.

Define results. Any lightsource will give "results" if you know how to use it. All strobes do is give you more options as far as raw power is concerned.

D80, because people are dropping them for the D300 and D3. D50 is pretty good as well, good noise control for an older camera. I have a D70, D50, and a D300, and the D50 was <300, and is a very good camera.
