Actually looks kinda good, surprisingly.

surprisingly?

Don't be so down. It looks great. I like the out-of-focus foreground, the color, and the underexposure.

I realize that could be taken as sarcastic, so let me clarify: I'm sincere
>> Anonymous
sincerity sincerely appreciated :)

999 times out of a thousand, a picture taken from the back of one's car is really lame.

When I come across that thousandth picture, it's always a bit of a surprise. Like a really good picture of someone's cat, or stuff on their desk, or a flower macro.

i actually took the photo as i was crossing the street in Chinatown.

Ahhh. That makes it a bit less surprising, then.

don't photoshop when you suck at it
edit ruins the photo

i will say its a bit noisy tho, wouldn't mind the effect if it wasn't so noisy

Looks like a frame from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. (Which was a cool movie)

Shopping doesn't suck.

Agreed. The shooped version looked better.

Ah-ha. I knew something was weird with the DOP. The closest cab is in sharper focus than the buildings at the same distance. Doesn't really matter, great shot. I wonder what steps you ran this through?

ideally i wanted to make the photo look as if it was in a dark film...added noise, adjusted saturation/exposure/offset/gamma/lens blur filture and other things.
>> ac
Yeah, shop'd version is better.
>> street-pirate
How did you get the glow of the farthest building? Is it just playing with exposure, brightness and contrast, or did you use another function?

I know I'm a beginner tipping somebody, but had you not blown out the sky, you would have had more latitude to work with in photoshop. You can always blow it out later if you see fit.

photomatix? tone mapping?
that is photochop for you?

blown out the sky?

Overexposed it, so all you get is that single white. Dropping the exposure would get more sky detail, but everything else is darker.
Exposure bracketing means you could get the detailed sky and the detailed city.

However, I like the OP picture just as it is.
