[BAGS] Lens down or lens up? Anonymous
So when you put your camera with lens attached in your bag when you need to walk around, put it down on the ground, lift it back and move around some more.

Is it better to put the lens down or the lens up?

<Picture is lens down, lens up would be the body at the bottom of the bag, and the lens would be, uh up.

>> Lens down

is good because it's in "ready to grab and shoot" position.

But it can be bad if you don't have filters and the lens cap goes off, then your front element is rubbing against the material of the bag.

>> Lens up

is good because the camera body is arguably stronger than a lens so if you move your bag around a lot, the body takes the hit and not the tip of the lens.

Who the fuck cares, just use your camera.

Because I want to know if one position might be better than the other when I stash my shit away when moving between locations?
>> Anonymous
Doesn't really matter.

DEFINITELY lens down if it's a DSLR.

In the "lens up" position any shit that found its way into the mirror box is shaken down onto the shutter and sensor. You don't want to clean your sensor more often than necessary, do you?

What if a meteorite falls out of the sky and hits your camera bag? You better get a titanium coated pelican case. And be sure to store the lens in a separate case, that way if one gets destroyed you still have the other.

Ah, that makes sense, I didn't think of that. Thank you.

Can anyone suggest some discreet camera bags?
I'd like to get a bag that looks like a normal messenger bag so that hobos don't try to jack me for my camera...

Domke, top quality discreet bags that unlike Crumpler don't look like fluorescent hipster bullshit.

This isn't discreet, 99.9% of people who might be interested in stealing your camera will know right away it's a camera bag.

I use a plain backpack or bag when I want to be discreet. Yes, it doesn't have soft compartments for every photographic gizmo, but I don't usually carry more than a camera, maybe a flash and a spare battery.

i vote lens down in bag, easier access

I wouldn't say Crumplers don't look like camera bags. I think they look like camera bags, just with a little flair.. ( i guess)

their not all fluorescent.

hey, help me out

i see you've three compartments made,

1- camera body+lens
2- flash and lightmeter
3- handycam

a) would you say there's enough space for another lens with the flash if you don't put the lightmeter

b) is there enough space for a 70-200 where the handycam is?

and c) does the lack of zipper bother you? dust can get in when storing your stuff at home. my current bag has a zipper and i can just store it in a closet when i don't need it, nothing gets in

>>221736

PLEASE tell me you dont keep your cam in the bag in the fucking closet!!

if you do,, STOP IT

if you dont.. just hoover the bag out b4 you use it, you should also be doing this after each dusty day/day at the beach and so on

each pad is attached to the inside of the bag by a small velcro strip, so If you wanted to you could move them around a little, like say If you wanted to make one side more narrow you could.

this 1st pic (on the left)shows is mostly empty, except the lens hood for my 17-55 2.8 in the middle to get an idea of the size..
The 2nd pic, shows it with my 17-55 2.8 extended to 55mm on the left, that lens fits a 77mm filter on it so you can get an idea of the width.. you can see you still have room at top and bottom of the lens incase your zoom has a tripod mount on it, there should be room for that, as for height I would say that anything taller than a 580 ex II with the defuser on it would probably be too tall for this bag.

I'm not sure of your zoom lens height, but 9" would be close to the limit this bag can handle without the top bulging up.

as far as the dust, I havent noticed a problem with it.. the bag does hafe some flap attaching the side top, kinda like a hinge, it don't completely seal out the interior though,

99% of the people who want to steal your shit don't care what your shit is, they just want to steal it. They'll steal your addidas backpack just as fast as they'll steal my faded, homeless junk-sack looking old Domke F2.

Besides, if they're after a camera all they have to do is see you put the camera in whatever bag you're carrying. Then they know it's a camera bag. The bottom line is don't leave your stuff, regardless of what it is, sitting around where people are going to want to steal it.

>>221733
That's true, they do make black ones. I'm just really not a fan of the styling or materials, they're too flashy in my opinion (even the black ones) and I don't like the tall and thin shape. I really like the Domke design, modular nature, materials, and subdued plain canvas look.
