Anyone own a lensbaby? Do you like it? Too artsy and nooblike for /p/?

I want one but I don't know if it is worth the $150-250 price tag for such a gimmicky effect.

Putting a lens baby on your Mamiya 645AF is a strange idea.

Check flickr to see what they look like (like ass). It is not artsy, but it replaces a gimmick with actually artistic effort.

the ones with the glass optic are great for people that know what they are doing

the ones with the plastic optic are excellent for instartfags

Honest n00b question here. What's the difference between a lensbaby and a tilt-shift lens?

A T/S lens, is a term used for a perspective changing lens used to get rid of converging vertical lines in architecture, or tilt the focal plane in your advantage, so you can take pictures of a whole fucking field of flowers. google it.

A lensbaby is a plastic lens with all sort of optical aberrations with the option of shifting the plane of focus, to create an ultra flat effect of making the universe look like it's made of toys. jk, that's what a real PC would do. the lensbaby just tries.

Also, both of these are way of trying to bring LF movements on to 35mm, which is usually nothing like what you've seen before. In a word, pretty amazing. also, look it up on flickr.

Learn to do some basic internet footwork.

fyi: he's talking about the early generation of plastic lensbabies

they still make the plastic version, but the new lens babies have an 'optic swap' system that allows you to put higher quality glass lenses in.

the composer and the control freak with the glass optic are fantastic lenses for /p/ros

the muse with the plastic optic are for holgafags

Wtf is up with the snark. I know what a lensbaby and a TS lens is. My point is that both just seem to move the plane of focus. Given this, can the cheaper lensbaby be used to do stuff you need a TS lens to do?

yes

The on a nikon or canon t/s lens, they have dials which tell you how much tilt (focal plane) you have or how much shift (perspective) you have, and you can dial it in for repeatable results while the lensbabies don't .

The more expensive lensbabies can lock position so you can take a series of similar shots.
Not sure if they actually have readings that you can re-use at a later date though.

The one I have has the locks, but no way to really record the settings.

They're like fisheyes - use them sparingly and with consideration and the results can be striking. Otherwise they're another gimmick.
>> ?suomynonA ??????????
if you want to play around a bit with the effect first, perhaps you could just try a filter. there are those that give the same effect, just that you can't move it around

why is the composer and conrol freak both $270?

shouldn't the control freak be mor expensive? it has more controls on it vs. the composer

>> Lensbaby’s Plastic optic is for plastic fanatics. Our softest optic overall, this creates very ethereal photos with abundant chromatic aberration. Part of the Lensbaby Optic Swap System.

>>with abundant chromatic aberration

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

No no, it's not a shitty lens, it's artistic!

That'll be $450 please.

please could all those that are defening lensbay post 1 good picture taken with one. i have yet to see one that doesn't just look like something that would come out of one of those free image editing softwares you get with pc magazines.. I will completely stand corrected if i see one that i feel is not like i described above

I checked the samples and Flickr. So pretty much what the Lens Baby does is have a sort of 'zoom during exposure' look to it?

Like, one part is in focus and the rest is completely not, except you can focus anywhere on the frame.

Is that it?

I personally think this looks pretty cool..im thinking about buying myself a lensbaby for myself for christmas. they seem pretty fun..i mean. if your bored it might be fun.

I'm not understanding the selective focus part.. can't you just do that with a very fast aperture? And then use Photoshop to do a motion blur around the part in focus?

I don't get it :/

well if your like me..
you dont want to use photoshop for that.
i dont even have photoshop installed but i have it, i rather a more natural affect, and if a damn lensbaby does it for you, than thats pretty B.A.
