The American State Department has a long list of cautions in the "safety and security" section of their traveler's guide to China, but the only things they caution about the police is that foreign visitors, especially sensitive ones like journalists and businessmen, can be searched without warning. And the usual "don't shoot military stuff, dumbass." I'm opposed to the way the Chinese state does business, too, but it's not some vortex of vanishing tourists.
