I'm thinking of creating a list of things I should take at least one photo of with my DSLR.
So what does /p/ love to take photos of?

Women. Preferably hot naked ones, but I'll take what I can get.

Otherwise nature stuff and portraits and so on.

It was raining today AND i had my camera on me yet i failed to get anywhere in starting my "project" on rain.

i blame the lack of notice it was going to rain and me not wearing wet weather gear.

Lack of notice it was going to rain? It's the UK. The notice was given long ago. :P

They've been promising the good weather was going to break up for a while.

I was taking shots of a club in a basement, when I went in it was nice and sunny, when i came out it was thunder and lightning.

Also i was supposed to be in work.

OP looks a little amature for spending $700+ on a DSLR. People should begin with point-and-shoots, then once they get a technique down, upgrade to a more powerful camera.

SLRs make it much easier to learn the technical aspects of photography

a p&s with manual controls is fine too.
spend a couple of years with a used bridge then you'll be ready for a reflex.

Not necessarily. The biggest problem, I believe, is that people tend to snap shots without thinking, using a different digital cam isn't going to solve this. However, a couple of months with a manual focus film slr (or rf) with a prime or two might just do so.

i started with some cheap point and shoot, then a Minolta 7000, then a Sony alpha 100 and a Minolta 700si and a Konica C35 :-).
this helped me a lot to understand how i can get the desired result.
