the first one is a cometition loser
it may look better to the /p/ trolls, but it will do poorly in a competition

How come?

suggestion: skip the competition. not because the quality of your photos, but because the entire idea of taking photos to win competitions is repulsive.

Winning competitions means more people see your photos.

You're a bit crap, aren't you?

No, really, why not enter a competition? You could probably win a camera or something, and it's not like you have to use your bragging rights.

but d00d, it's art! Anyone making money is a total sell out man.

nah, i'm just of the opinion (and it is an opinion, not a fact) that adhering to photo competition standards engenders a stagnant, california-photo-club style fit for a calendar, or maybe a new age cd cover.

what i'm saying is, photo competitions are usually judged by pretty, rather than meaning.

what's wrong with judging a photo by how it looks? a photo doesn't have to have meaning to be good. for that matter, no art has to have meaning to be good.

says who? you?

i do believe thats what they typed. ask most people who arent photographers, the people who buy posters and binders and calendars, photos for magazines, product photographs and everything else that isnt considered fine art photography and see if those pople think a picture needs a meaning to be good.

you can pretend the world doesnt work this way all you want but in the end, the pretentious 'cant-you-feel-my-pain' picture of a crying clown in black and white doesnt matter to anyone but you, and further more, it shouldnt.

From the competitions I've been in the judges almost always verbally address technical flaws before anything else. I like the first picture, too, but it wouldn't hold up in competition regardless of content. Any time I've seen something place that had glaring technical flaws it was PJ work.

I'm not saying you shouldn't go and enter competitions but be prepared for disapointment. Don't let it bring you down.

I wouldn't say it's gone that far, but it'd depend on the venue. You're going to get that a lot more often at a Floral-themed contest than, say, an art gallery sponsored contest.
It doesn't hurt to do research on past years' winners or what the judges likes and dislikes are. That is, if you care to win. Shooting for winning may or may not be something you end up liking to do.
Don't forget to prepare the piece closely to the rules, too. Usually it's just black or white matte, but sometimes they want things framed
