Red Arrows - Legality of using them in Career-Photography? Xan
(Not my photo, simply a space filler)

Hey there.

I'm a pretty green photographer in england, my father who's been doing wedding-photography for several years has bought taught me to use my Cannon 400D !Rebel.

Problem is, i suffer from depression, so i dont quite have the drive to be a photo-journalist, nor to spends days on phones or writing emails to sell each photo i wish to sell.

Recently there was a Red Arrow airshow put on for the public, and i took around 80 photos, with at least 20 turning out well. Well, my family suggested something thats been sticking in my mind for a while now; why not create a photo-book? Collect my best Red Arrow pictures, gather as much information about the planes as i can, and make a book of them for Red Arrow enthusiasts.

The problem is i have no idea the legality of making a book with pictures of the aircraft in, let alone without the RAFs permission. Nor do i even have a clue where to start looking to get permission, or if it would ever be granted.

Any more experianced photographers got any advice? Prefraby people from the UK themselves?

How old are you OP? Just curious...

Not in the UK, but from your description this sounds like a military flight team, like the American Blue Angels maybe? Why don't you contact them, I'm sure they have people behind them who could answer these questions.

Red arrows are the Royal Air Force display team (UK). Probably the first display team ever but dont quote me on that.

Twenty, why do you ask?

Hmm, as i guessed they are RAF then. In that case i'm definatly going to need permission from someone, i just have no idea who. Its not like i simply label a letter to the RAF saying "Can i use my Red Arrow photos in a book".

Guess i'm going to have to start looking through RAF sites to see if they have offices that talk to the "media" crowd.

First thing I would do, is to ask someone who knows law, is there any law which doesn't allow you to publish your photos?
I mean, you did take them on a public place?
>> Xan
Unfortunatly i dont know anyone versed in law, nor where to even start searching.

Yep, definatly a public place, the photos where taken from a cliff top by a public road.

I've been reading further into this fourm, and the 'photography laws' thread, and it seems from that i could probobly be fine.

But then again, would publishing a book be "comercial use"? After all, it would be released with the intent to make money.

Ugh, i love "grey" area laws.

In the US, at least, it doesn't change something's category as "art" if it's sold. You can sell photos you took yourself all you want, but you can't use them to sell something else.

Yeah, but if it was America and I was trying to get info on doing a book on the Blue Angels I might enter "us air force" "blue angels" ".gov" in a web browser and I'd probably find their official web page, which I'm sure would have a phone number and I'd give them a call. If you don't fucking want any help, don't fucking ask for it.

Hmm, or not. I think i'll actually just go back to looking at pr0n.
