canon 50mm 1.4 or 1.8II? Anonymous
Hello /p,

Has anyone tried both of these lenses? Does the .4 f stop make that huge of a difference? Is the 1.8II really as fragile as people say? Has the USM motor on the 1.4 ever crapped out on someone? Need your input, cause I'd really like to own a "nifty fifty" while getting the best bang for my buck.

Haven't actually tried the 1.8, but everything I read said don't waste money on it. Get the 1.4, you may not use it at 1.4, but it's much better at 1.8 than the actual 1.8 lens. And even better at 2.0.

I loves my 1.4.

The 1.8 is good.. for $50. If you have lots of money, you'll probably want to spend it.

1.8II is good... if you can't afford the 1.4. Get the 1.4 if you have money to spend.

why get a 1.4 if you think you will never use it...

I own one, love it...but, the age old question is do i 350 dollars love it vs 50 dollars love it...

I personally 350 dollars love it...

if you can reasonably afford the 1.4, and you really do want the additional softness and speed...then go for it...

if you are just randomly getting an lens and thinking zomg so fast..must be 1337...then dont waste your money and get the 1.8II

if you are a broke anon, then get the 1.8II, if you have $$$zomgbank then get the 1.4...

The EF 50/1.8 II takes good pictures, but the build quality is that of a chinese plastic toy. I used two of them and the manual focusing ring was loose and awkward on both. Some people don't mind, but as an aged olympusfag I find this rather annoying.

If you are asking this question you are not a pro.

Thus, like me, you should get the 50mm 1.8.

I use this thing ALL the time, and let me tell you, the lightness is a GOOD THING.

If you carry around your dslr all day long, after awhile you really appreciate how light and compact this lens is.

Also, 1.8 is still a fantastically low f stop for such a cheap lens.

I advise you to get the 50mm 1.8 and spend the money you save on a lens for which there is no AWESOME cheap alternative.

Thanks for all of the input. Grabbed the 50 1.8ii and am waiting for it to arrive. hope i make the best use of it.

The 1.8 is also good because it can take good pictures and you can use it in more risky situations where you would not be happy about exposing $1000 of glass.

I recommend the Canon EF 50 mm F1.2L USM

I have the lens hood on the 75$ 50mm f/1.8.

It makes me look like a professional.
