Get farther back and zoom in more, the closer you focus at a long focal length the more the background will be thrown out of focus. Its better for when your background is boring and the flower / subject isn't

2nd pic is better for that, because the background is nice, and adds to the pic, first one not so much

www.dofmaster.com is a really good resource for what>>38079was talking about.

Basically you punch in your camera and lens settings and it will tell you how exactly how much will be in range in your shot.
