Help, /p/

I'm at a loss. I mean, look at this pic. I had to set my shutter speed to 1/5sec (I think) to get any color.

Why can't I get my shutter speed to go any faster without turning too dark? Is it my lens, or what? :(

Bumping it up to ISO 400 brings the shutter speed to around 1/20sec. Still can't get rid of the blur, and any higher than ISO 400 = noise. At least, in this instance.

Kit lens indoors?
VR saved my ass tonight at the bowling alley. Exposure wise anyways, I still took shitty pics.

Is right. Cease trying to improve immediately. We shitty amateur photographers must remain in control of this piece of shit board. mwahahaha...

Okay, go check out Wikipedia on how cameras work and you'll get a feel for the concept of apertures and whatnot, so you'll have an idea of how things interact. Basically, higher ISO means more sensitive images, but that will invariably mean you'll get noise. Lower ISO will mean a cleaner-looking image, but you'll need to use a slower shutter speed( like 1/5 second) to get enough light. You can manually force it, but that will leave you with generally bad photos.

But that's HARDLY the entire story on the subject, so DO check out Wikipedia and see what it has to say.

Just leave it on that green square mode, it'll do your shit for you.

true, but the pictures I take are metered at +2 (overexposed) instead of at 0. Doesn't make sense, but it was something I got used to back when I was using my parents' crappy P&S.

It's like, my third day using the thing. Sorry.

Not this picture. Switch to auto because you really don't understand manual. Also, generic indoor lighting sucks and you will have to use an wide open aperture or flashes or high iso.

Ok, I thought you were just trolling us for lulz. For now, try to use auto or p-mode until you get comfortable enough. Experiment with manual if you can spare some shots and try to remember the settings which work.

btw, what lens are you using? (kit?)

your exif also says you were at f/5.6. Since you're hand-holding and the focal length is 27mm your shutter speed should be 1/30th or faster (1/50 etc). Crank the fstop up (start from 3.5 and work your way 'down' to 5.6). That should do the trick.

Yeah, it probably means you're gonna have to get closer to your subject but the lens you have doesn't really afford you the benefit of being at a safe distance.
