Does anyone remember the high speed pictures I posted several months ago? Well, either way, I decided to experiment with that a little more tonight by nuking a tomato.

I had made a little trigger for the flash out of two sheets of aluminum foil and a piece of cardboard, but it kept failing so I ended up triggering the flash by hand.

The thing is, timing a flash with a BB hitting a small tomato is a really, really daunting task! D:

I got it right finally though, sort of...
I only had a handful of BBs so I ended up shooting random objects at it.

Took me a moment to even notice the hit in the first shot, but that second one is pretty cool.

Why the black and white though? Would've thought this would look much more striking with a bright red tomato.

Random objects...like this screw!

This was one of the failed shots, the screw actually hit the tomato and then bounced off...I think it's my favorite of the three, though.

The eggcrate in the background is absolutely horrible, I know.

So anyway, how many of you have experimented with high speed stuff? Have you used real high speed equipment or have you done it the ghetto way like I did? (I.E. long exposure in the dark + flash)

normally yeah, the black and white is mostly to hide lighting and ugly colors. The piece of fabric it's sitting on was green and the eggcrate was that gross creamy yellow/white color.

I'm somewhat tempted with the last one to leave only red, yellow, and orange hues saturated or to atleast heavily undersaturate the rest but I've got mixed feelings on the selective desaturization thing.

Very nice OP, lots of creativity.

Yeah selective desaturation has gotten so cliché it's hard to use seriously.

Ghetto technique like yours but dropping a coin is probably slightly easier than having to shoot something heh.

I've looked into making a trigger but not given it a shot yet, there's no Radioshack equivalent here in the UK so I wouldn't know where to get circuit parts.

like so. How does /p/ prefer it? Black and white or slightly selective desat?

That's actually not so bad, definitely prefer it to full black and white by quite a lot.

the trigger I made is really simple to do, actually. I just had a lot of problems with the wires slipping out of place and got frustrated with it.

you basically just put a strip of foil on each side of a little cardboard frame and connect a wire from the foil to a contact on the flash on each side. then you shoot through the foil and it presses the foil together long enough to trigger the flash.

I couldnt remember where I saw the instructions the first time so I just drew my own diagram thingy

I did it with a light bulb again tonight. I really like the way this came out, but I'm finished experimenting with this for now. It really is just a gimmick, after all. It's still really, really fun to do though =]

left it b/w out of personal taste and for B/W = INSTA-ART

Why don't you take good photos instead of making diy shit all the time?
>> Anonymous
>>210665

Do you just put this past the object being shot and assume/hope that the effects of the impact are still happening when it is triggered?

Tandy was the UK Radioshack. Nowadays you can try Maplin or some of the other big suppliers.

you put it between the gun and the object. I couldn't get it to work right though so I pressed the button on the flash myself

>>211245
because I'm a total geek when it comes to DIY stuff. Go to my other thread if you want to talk about how much I suck at taking pictures.

>>211252

Interesting, I'll have a look for a local Maplin, thanks.

>>211236

I don't think it worked so well here really, I mean it's hard to even notice it's a high speed photo, it just looks like a broken bulb rather than a bulb in the process of breaking.

yeah, I didn't get the effect I wanted out of it at all. I just liked the way it ended up looking. I flashed it twice which is why part of it ghosted. So it's more of a double exposure than high speed.

This is what I really wanted to happen, but the bb gun wasn't strong enough to break the bulb and Im too scared of guns to use a real one.

Use pointed pellets instead of BBs.
>> Anonymous
I'm building a series of optical, sound and metal plate sensors, once I get it working with BB's i'll try an air rifle
