hey /p/

do you always use a lens hood when shooting outside?

if so, is flower hood best? and which side are the longer "pedals" on, im assuming top/bottom.
>> Anonymous
I use a lens hood when it's sunny out.

Mine are old screw-on metal hoods for my old MF takumars. They work great.

Maybe I should become a tripfag so that people can start associating a name with "that guy who always talks about his old pentax lenses".
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
I do on my 11-18 (which is petal) and my 100-300 (tube) but not on my 50 because its inbuilt one is smaller than my filter's thread.

I'm about to start using cokin anyway, so no more hoods!
>> Anonymous
use pedal on my two widest lenses pretty much 100% of the time..

dont have one for my 300 :(

and yes, longer pedals are on top/bottom.
>> Anonymous
i dont use them at all, as i'm hardly ever in a situation where i get lens flare, and with my ef-s 17-55IS the flare looks cool as fuck, so i dont use it on that either
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
Why the hell do lens hoods cost so much? They're just sheets of plastic.

My lens hoods came with my lenses, and they're made of metal.

depends on the lens. i always test to see which ones really need it.

Nikon actually but going through stores I notice how expensive photography gear is in general. Lenses and bodies that require precision fabrication and a lot of r&d, I understand but plastic lens hoods, hotshoes (plastic and metal, durr), flash sync cables (copper wiring with rubber insulation). Even high end branded metal tripods cost more than the metal tripod of the old geodetic surveying instruments I see similar to the attached pic. Mount is easily adaptable since the screws conform to standards.

They're so expensive because people buy and they make so much profit off of it. You can get the same shit from honk kong for 10% of the price a lot.. at least here in Europe.

nevar shoot with a hood, lens flare makes photos epic

petal/flower hoods are stupid and completely useless

get a normal hood and crop out the edges at wider lengths

petal hoods do not do shit

but you're Butterfly so you are too stupid to realize that

normal style hoods are the only ones actually blocking stray light

so you're saying we should buy really expensive wide angle lens, then use a hood designed for 20mm and just crop the photo back down to 20mm when we take a photo at 11mm because otherwise the hood intrudes onto the photo?

Please tell me you dont mean that.
>> Anonymous
>> so you're saying we should buy really expensive wide angle lens

i didn't say that

>> then use a hood designed for 20mm and just crop the photo back down to 20mm when we take a photo at 11mm because otherwise the hood intrudes onto the photo?

uh, you'll lose like 10 degrees by cropping out the edges, it won't turn 11mm to 20mm, you're a fucking idiot, it'll be 14mm at the most

>> Please tell me you dont mean that.

please tell me you're a fucking idiot

>>248761
yea, I always wondered what petal hoods were actually doing.

For that matter, do vented hoods like the square ones on Leitz lenses actually make a difference? Why are the holes there? Not for wind resistance, so I figure it could only be for cooling, but that's just stupid on a piece of metal that size...
>> Anonymous
yeah.. when i shoot at 10mm, that petal hood isn't doing shit.

hurfdurf
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>248784
right you didnt say buy one, i have one already.

So you're telling me to use an 11mm as a 14mm? I think you have serious mental defects in order to present that as a valid argument so i'm going to go now ok?
>> Anonymous
lol, backing out because you're a goddamn moron

i said at the most, i'm not going to calculate how much 10 degrees translate to but it's not going to be equivalent to 14mm

the vignetting will be minimal and the payoff is worth it or take a step back and get the same framing

every good landscape people know this, no one uses petal hoods

but you're Butterfly so you're a fucking idiot
>> Anonymous
op here,

so from what i gather, a few people say its cool unless you want lens flair, and then one anon says lens hoods suck. So I guess ill ebay one from hong kong for $5 and see whats up.

>>248820
you do need to match the hood to the focal length
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>248810
You could have just said get a hood that matches your widest angle instead of getting a fancy shaped petal hood but you seem to insist on degrading your images on purpose, Heavyweather getting to you much?
>> Anonymous
Here's a hint for the people confused by petal shaped hoods: your sensor isn't round.

And if you can't sleep at night because your hood isn't as effective as it could be at the long end of your zoom lens either stick to primes, get an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, or find out how a compendium works.

Why don't you just use a 50mm all the time and take a step forward/back to get the same framing? Tell me how that works out for you.
