hi /p/

ITT: Movies (independent or otherwise, artsy or not) that inspire you to take good pictures. (Or just films with good photography)

I'll start.

- The Namesake (just watched it yesterday)
- Children of Men

and I'm looking to watch Kôhî Jikô (Cafe Lumiere) next.

You bet. I still couldn't figure which camera/s does he use during the film.

Now that we are at it, what other movies does /p/ think any photographer SHOULD watch?

Yep, Kubrick was a PJ before he went to cinema, and it definitely shows in his movies. (Pic related.)

Lawrence of Arabia and Citizen Kane also stand out as having freaky-good composition. The last three movies I saw whose composition really impressed me was "Across the Universe," "The Darjeeling Limited," and, surprisingly, the new Indiana Jones.

Worst composition I've seen in a movie was some otherwise forgettable film about a sports journalist who finds a down-on-his-luck ex-star-boxer that turns out to be a fake, all the while struggling with his family life. The cinematographer was way, way too enamored of shallow depth of field without knowing how to use it... nothing really artistic or creative in the composition, just like if someone decided "Oh, hey, let's shoot a conventional Hollywood drama exclusively at T/1.3!" Seriously, I don't think the aperture was ever smaller than 2.8 throughout the whole film.

The Darjeeling Limited
Atonement

Oh, and Across The Universe like someone already said. Into the Wild had a lot of really great shots in it, too.

Oh hell yes, Lawrence of Arabia was amazing. The best use of an ultra-wide format to date.
Pretty much all of Lean's epics are stunning.

Lovely photography.

Other movies which have good photography (IMO) are Letters from Iwo Jima, Apocalypto, Solaris, Sunshine, Fight Club, Blade Runner, Alien, Heat, Alien, Black Hawk Down, Munich, Schilder's List (SP?), Gladiator.

Hard Candy. Even big budget films are second to this when it comes to the look of filming.

Also, it should be one of those films every 4channer should see.

Control
There will be Blood
Sideways
Gegen die Wand (Head on)
... I could go on for a while, I'm really into movies.

I also agree with Children of Men, City of God (one of the best movies of all time), La Haine, Atonement, Requiem, Constant Gardener.. and pretty much everything Kubrick has done. I think Barry Lyndon is his most beautiful movie though, it was like watching an old painting animate.
I completely disagree with Hero though.

Oh and I need to know what this is

OP here. I haven't seen it, but the few scenes I've gotten to see looked nice, and I did get the idea that it might be good in that department. I didn't mention it because I havent really sat down to watch it though hehe

I don't remember LSTSB having particuarly good cinematography. Haven't seen the other films.

Let's get some more older movies in here. Too much last fifteen years. Battleship Potempkin, for instance. Staircase scene, etc. etc.

A couple that inspired me, despite how cheesy they are:

- 300. The style reminds me a lot of infrared, which is one of my favorite aspects of photography
- Shoot 'em Up. I dunno. I just thought the colors were so intense and vivid, and it was shot well (pun intended <_<)

What the Bleep Do We Know

it really made me think about photography -reality, relativity, perception, and perspective (the stuff that photography is made out of and what makes it interesting)

I liked Party Monster, but the cinematography isn't that spectacular in my opinion, just average. The bizarreness of the club kids makes the shots stand out more than anything.
