How bad EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens actually is. Everyone just says something bad about it, but there must be something good also, right?
I'm about to buy Canon EOD 400D and that lens comes with it.

The non-IS 18-55 is almost free on the second hand market.

Its just a mediocre lens and is really limitied in its uses

inb4ac buy 400d body and 18-55 IS separately

the extra $75 is totally worth it

It's pretty shitty. I'd just get the body and the 50mm F/1.8, then pick up a good standard zoom when you can afford it.

seconded. The 1.8 is my goto cheappo lense.
I bought a 28-105 canon usm that I'm not happy with either.

isn't bad as an introductory lens

18-55 is a good range for exploration

yeah i agree about the 50mm 1.8 but after hes used that for a while any zoom is going to feel shitty in comparison.

It's because they are shitty in comparison. Nothing wrong with starting with a nice, sharp lens.

Not to mention it's a prime, so you learn to compose with your feet.

the 28-105 is waaaay better than the 18-55, waaaaay better, i've taken some great shots with it and it doesn't have the soft characteristings of the 18-55. They're also around $150

It does have problems, but if you have no other lenses then definitely get it until you can get some others.

I don't totally agree because of the focal range of the lens. A 50mm prime would be good, but if you are only getting one lens at that time, I think it is better to have the 18-55mm until you can get other lenses to cover that range. Of course, it does depend on what you shoot though. If you are doing portraits, the 50mm 1.4 is a good way to go.

tldr: If you are just starting in photography or are on a limited budget, get the kit lens. If you are upgrading and you are already familiar with what lenses you need, bypass the kit lens and find EF or EF-S equivalents of what you had with your other camera.

I disagree, Learning to compose a shot without using zoom is important.

It's also one less lens that you have to buy. If you start with a 50mm, you can decide if you really need a zoom and get a quality one. The 50mm will always be useful, whereas the 18-55 one will always take sub-par pictures.

A fifty is too long on a crop for a do-all lens. The 28/2.8 isn't much more.

The 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (kit lens for 450D) is much better than the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II USM (kit lens for 350D and 400D) and is only 175 dollars on Amazon.com.

Use this place to compare image quality. As you can se, both are a bit soft, but the IS is much better.

Are you talking about the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM or the 28-105 f/4.0-5.6 USM because they are waaaaay different. Really, waaaaay different. The 150 dollar one (f/4.5-5.6) is utter shit, much worse than the kit and the 230 dollar one (f/3.5-4.5) is pretty nice and cheap but doesn't have image stabilization.

If you are going to get a 50mm prime, I'd rather get the $340 f/1.4 than the $90 f/1.8. The f/1.4 is much nicer and much faster and still relatively cheap. But for 90 dollars, you should know that you'll have to upgrade eventually. Check out these two reviews:

i meant the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM but i was mentioning the price on the used market. My friend bought one for $150.

For a cheapo kit lens, you can take pretty good pictures with it. Sure, it has problems a lot of photographers will notice, but if you need something to put on your camera to take pictures of your friends, family, pets, and car, it'll do the job just fine.

i got my 400D with the twin lens kit so the 18-55 and the 75-300 and both have been ok so far.. im waiting on a 50mm and a 28mm to arrive some time this week hopefully , then again i knew some people so i got mine quite a bit cheaper (got the kit + CF card for about the price of just the body)
