Ye, aware of both points, been looking about at different strobes and other lighting options, and I need to figure out how to contruct a background. An infinity board would be nice of course but seem unreasonably priced for what they are.

The way your subject is cut off makes it look like either you just took a snapshot or you were too lazy to think about composition (redundancy)

The arrangement of the nuts and acorns is nice, but that makes it a potentially good centerpiece, not a potentially good photograph. Cutting off the left side was a bad compositional choice, but this composition wouldn't be that great even if you'd left it in.
