I've been interested in photography on and off for... well too long really given my (lack of) skill. I dabbled around in film a long while ago with nothing much to show for it. I recently bought a DSLR because the price got to a level that I could justify but still I haven't produced much that I'm proud of.

I recently stumbled across Chris Weeks' website and read a bit about his thoughts on photography which inspired me to pick up a cheap used rangefinder from craigslist. Here are the best few shots from my first roll.

Thoughts? Criticisms? GTFO?

That first pic is freaking great, The others have potential but the blurriness or Missed focus hurt them.

What film did you use?

The first one is definitely the one I'm most please with... I took 10 others that didn't come out at all. It's hard to frame a shot from belly level while riding. =) I'm bummed about the focus issues as well but the range finder focus is a totally different beast than I'm used to. I still kinda like the shots even with the focus personally but I agree I need to get better with the camera.

The film was Kodak BW400CN which can be developed on normal color equipment so that I could easily develop it and get a CD at the local drugstore. I think I'd like to pick up some used darkroom equipment and play around on my own but for now I'm just messing with the camera. It's a Yashica Electro GT. A 45mm f1.7 lens isn't bad for $10 on craigslist. =)

Wow, you don't suck! It's so refreshing to see a self-proclaimed noob here that actually has a bit of creativity and sense.

As for a critique, the first one is definitely the best. Personally I would have gone with a little smaller aperture and/or focused at the hyperfocal distance to get the gauges in focus as well, but it's good nonetheless.

Second would be great except for focus.

Third doesn't do much for me, needs a stronger focal point or better leading lines if the guy at frame center is the focus.

Fourth again good except for focus.

Fifth is decent except for focus. The subject matter doesn't do much for me but it's a decent photo.

Overall advice, ditch the T400CN. I personally think it's the worst black and white film you can get. The blacks are muddy and it lacks dynamic range. I'd highly suggest the Kodak T-Max or Ilford Delta ranges, Delta 100 is my favorite black and white film (other than TechPan, which is discontinued). Processing it at home is very, very easy and cheap. The Yashica is a great camera and I think you'll learn a lot by using it. I'm a rangefinder fan myself.

Both very great. The others aren't, but they're still pretty decent.
