The K1000 is a nice choice: sturdy, cheap, plenty of lenses available. For the same reasons, I chose a Sears KS2. It's made by Ricoh for Sears, acutally, and It's just like the Pentax - even uses the same lenses. Similar units can be had on eBay for $25 to $100, depending on the included lenses, etc. I practically stole mine for $80 with three lenses, a flash, motor drive, and other goodies. Only drawback is it uses an LED light meter that's hard to use in the dark. The K1000 uses a very simple "needle and eye" analog meter. But check out the Sears line if you're into being different.
