I agree it can be over-used, and seeing people fuck it up really badly is endessly frustrating, but when done well it's a very interesting, very modern style of editorial photography.
And I mean really, no matter how much you hate shots where the lighting is the focal point rather than the subject, that shit still looks better than 95% of the pictures posted on /p/.
