Snow + SLRs =? Anonymous
/p/, I'm going on a weekend trip to Tahoe tomorrow and am bringing my D40 with. This is my first time bringing the camera to somewhere that's cold (I live in the Bay Area). Is there anything I should know about snowy places and SLRs? Is it terrible if snow gets on the camera?

pic isn't mine but related I guess

the Li-ion batteries and the cold aren't friends. Be sure to keep it warm or not use it on snowy areas. the battery would last a lot less

Li-ion are the only battery that still holds a decent charge in sub-zero environments.
True, the battery life will diminish to only a fraction as it would hold in room temperatures, but still many times that of Ni-cd and Nimh counterparts.
the cold will not damage the battery, it will return to its former glory once back in room temperatures.

I could say the same about my penis or Butterfly's penis.

Ok, got the battery bit. Should I worry about getting snow on the body/lens?

You should be fine as long as it doesn't melt and get inside of anything. If you get water inside the lens just put it in a warm dry place and it should be fine. For the body, just don't get water in it.

if the D40 is anything like my D70 (and as from my memory from playing with one it is), even tho its not weather sealed, it still is quite resilient against water seeping in, but its no means water proof... maybe i just dont treat my cameras well.

yeah, the D70 is pretty durable.
