hi /p/

i took this recently with a new slr. here's my concern. okay, this isn't a good photo but these cameras make it too easy in a way. what am i missing? the only other camera i've ever owned is a film pentax and i feel like i've been handed a stratocaster when all i know how to do is play a tin whistle and it makes me feel a little weird.

before i use this camera, should i be investing in some kind of course perhaps? or maybe i should go back to film and learn properly?

i don't understand your problem. is there a problem?

photo looks cool.

thanks. yeah, it doesn't seem right to me that i can press a button and it automatically focuses for me etc. i have bad vision in both eyes though so i don't trust my own ability to focus properly. i also think looking at this and some others there's alot i'm not getting about light and so forth. this one i wanted to be slightly blurred and its a night shot anyway so its the best i could do but looking at some others i've done i think they could be a lot better resolution for a start. i want to be good but i'm also not technically minded at all. i feel on one hand its okay to learn through trial and error but then on the other i feel like its insulting to proper photographers that a camera can do all this for you and you just point and click.

Boring photo.
Stupid post.
Obligatory sage.

There's your problem

Put it in manual. That'll help you to leanr a lot about your camera.

What also helps for beginners is reading the Flickr group for their camera. Believe it or not, but it has really helped some beginning photographers I know a lot.

Reading about photography is what you want to do.
Also just watch at a lot of photo's a lot.

there is nothing wrong with the composition, but the overal contrast is shit. all you have here is dark, middle, and light gray. fuck with it in curves. also, i'd say you should crop off about 20% on the left side - that building is real big and takes up about half of the image, and its really distracting when the lightest element in the image is also the biggest.

>>243772

if you want the image to be slightly out of focus, you need to open up the lens down to 2.8 or 2 or even lower. then you'd need to focus somewhere in the foreground and recompose the image. the depth of field will be cut way down and focus will fall off into the distance. the problem with lowering depth of field with a shot like this is that the images is composed of buildings that are so big. it's nearly impossible to cut down the depth of field with a composition like this unless the focus is placed very close to the camera - you will NOT be able to do it any other way.

Way too teach him bullshit.
>> Anonymous
>>243832

yep, narrowing the depth of field definitely won't drop the focus off.
>> Anonymous
>>243840

He explained it so incredibly undetailed, that's it's basically bullshit.

>>243843

i don't know how much more detailed he could be without saying "and take your hand and turn the little aperture knob until it says '2.8' then hold the camera at your eye..."

sorry op for this lame argument in yer thread

>>243847

- The 2.8 aperture is wrong, you can easily get bokeh at higher apertures as well. Totally depends on the shot.
- You don't have to focus in the foreground. Depends on where you want the bokeh.
- Wrong! The focuspoint will not change. Maybe it looks like less is in focus, because of the bokeh, but that doesn't makes the "focus fall off"
- You CAN get bokeh while you don't focus at something close to you. Something far away will work as well, the bokeh will just change.

Most of what he said isn't incorrect (except for the focus part), but if you tell that to someone who doesn't understands anything of it isn't helping. They will think it'll only work the way he described. It would be good to link him to wikipedia or a good photography site, explaining aperture and bokeh properly. But don't tell him this undetailed crap.

OP, I kinda like your shot.

well i put up a pic and i attempted a broader and what i think is an interesting topic so gtfo if you don't like it

>>243781
ok i've been trying that but i know nothing about f stops and the range of what i can do seems limited to me. this is why i'm wondering if it's better to dig out my old pentax and start again. seems to me to use a camera like this slr you need to know all this beforehand which is obvious i guess

>>243818
good advice, ty. i'll look into that now.

>>243823
i see what you mean but actually i like that heaviness on the side but maybe it's my eye or something. i liked the clouds initially although i'm disappointed i didn't get their moodiness and then i wanted to play around with the idea of that feeling when you look up at the sky that you're falling into it sort of thing. i'm going to look into contrast ideas more. thanks for the input

>>243830
thanks very much for explaining this but i don't really get it. kind of what i mean in the broader sense. you get a camera like this and it does stuff for you but you don't really know what so you can't actually improve. thanks though for taking the time.

OP again. here's another. i liked this one and i did spend some time thinking about the composition and what i was saying. again though i'm not happy about the resolution. i'd like this to be really crisp and clear so again the issue with whether or not i can focus myself (which means losing time) or have to rely on the automatic function or even if it is a focus issue

Either you have a vastly different understanding of what "recently" means than I do, or your camera's clock is set wrong. EXIF says these were shot in January.

Good shots, though.

thanks. and yeah, i didn't set the clock. these were taken last week. here's one of my favorites just for the subject matter that i didn't even notice at first but again the fuck up on lighting and resolution. idk. i'm trying to read up on it all but it won't compute in my head

here's another. i liked these contrasts of the grays in front and colors behind alot. shame i couldn't get him all in the frame but i didn't even notice him until reviewing them later so whatever i got was a bonus imo. you learn all the time. after this i realized how important it was to keep in mind framing all the time no matter what

and then this (i'll stop now). set on autofocus and again a big loss in detail but i liked the distorted looming feel of it anyway. people don't like it when you take pics of them either i realized so you have to move very quickly. alot to keep in mind with photography

thanks again /p/

90% of what makes an artist is good materials and instruments to work with -
Q) why doeas a good craftsman never blame their tools?
A) they should have the best tools so theyve only themselves to blame

tools are excellent and if buying a stratocaster helps you write a great tune whereas buying an Albert-dogshit will just leave you tuneless - i would say go with the strat
