I've seen someone do better than average macro photography with a camera phone and a magnifying glass, those were some skills that surpassed limited equipment. Look for good lighting, look for interesting angles. The second and third picture here are just snapshots. The first at least has a basic balanced composition but really needs to get in closer, which I'm sure you couldn't do. Read some art theory and start having fun. As for a camera, a canon powershot of some sort is a good relatively cheap way to get into it and learn, and they're small enough to take anywhere in a pocket.
