Light lenses are good when you are travelling. Of course, you'll want a telephoto for some shots too. Also, would you recommend me spend a little more on a 400D or 450D over the 350D? I'm thinking of buying one.

If you're thinking of getting a new camera at all, I'd strongly consider going with the newest tech. EG, I'd never buy a D40 over a D60, because the D60 uses a newer image processor and has oodles of new features over the D40. But that's me.

if you can afford the price difference go for the 450D as it is an improvement on an already good little dslr...
i bought the 350 when it got out (for like 1000€ at the time) and i'm currently waiting to get a 40 D (sadly i won't get it before christmas)

Some customs places have forms where you can register your equipment for "temporary export", at least thats how it works in canada. That way you wont be harassed if they suspect that you bought something when you were away.

Oodles of new features? The only questionably worthwhile new feature is dust reduction.

Buy lenses, not bodies.

lol at first i thought it was a little waterfall,
but there's actually a guy fishing in the bottom right hand corner

a wide angle will definitely be required, for landscaping and stuff
