thoughts on the Sigma DP1?

is this something you want to buy?
>> Anonymous
No. But it's something I want to have.

28mm-equiv lens is too wide.
f/4.0 lens is too slow.
Minimum focusing distance is too far.
Foveon sensor is too low-res and its high-ISO ability is sketchy (i.e., looks like ass based on the example images I've seen)

Oh, and $1K is too pricey.

that's exactly why I'm so mad at this thing. I want this fixed focal high end digital camera concept to catch fire but this thing is obviously going to be a complete failure and result in other manufactures not trying.

You want one of these cameras to sell? here is what you need.

6mp sensor that has at least the noise performence of a Canon rebel or 20d. I.e usable iso 1600

35mm with F2.0 or faster lens(if it's going to be fix focal it needs to be at least faster then the standard f2.8 zooms on compact cameras)

good built in flash.

That's it, that's what you need, these cameras are primarily going to be used indoors at events where you don't want to carry around a large DSLR, so functioning in low light is the top concern.

Leica Tri-Elmar-M 1:4 16-18-21mm ASPH on M8 must be shitty combination then too. It has almost same focusing distance, the lens is almost same in terms of 28mm f/4 on M8 crop and from what I hear, M8 sensor sucks too.

And guess what? people still pay much more for that than dp1 could ever cost.

Another problem with it was it having no viewfinder built-in. Its one thing to have additional ones for wide and tele, but to have none at all and make you rely on the shitty LCD screen is an abomination.

>If this camera would have had a 35mm F2.0 lens
this.

It's a prime, not a fixed focal length.

Wow, dumbest comparison ever. Are you just trolling?

>Leica Tri-Elmar-M 1:4 16-18-21mm ASPH on M8 must be shitty combination then too.
1. It's a three-focal-length lens. The DP1's is only one focal length
2. You can swap out the lens on the Leica M8. Nothing wrong with a 28mm-equiv f/4.0 lens if you can swap it out for a fast normal. Lots wrong with a 28mm-equiv f/4.0 lens if that's the one and only lens you can ever use.
3. The M8 sensor doesn't suck that much. It's better than most for B&W, equal to most for color. Compared to the Foveon's, which is Ultimate Fail for B&W since you're stuck with the 4.7MP resolution and lose the theoretical Foveon color advantage.
4. Leicas don't sell that well.

Totally Apples to Oranges comparison.

no-one uses your old definition of a prime lens anymore

A fixed focal length lens is one that can't focus, not one that can't zoom.

just in case its not a troll, that would be a focus free lens or fixed focus lens. not fixed focal length lens.
