Is your subject the sunset/landscape or the chick in the corner? Right now, they're fighting each other. And the cell phone in the shot makes it look very tourist-snapshotty to me.

Sunrises aren't interesting enough to carry a picture on their own. Make your subject the chick in the corner instead.

Not that sunrises are *boring* per se, just that you get one every morning and another scene almost the same every evening, and it looks a hell of a lot more interesting in person. So a sunrise/sunset makes a good *component* of an image, but they shouldn't be the only thing there. Make it a background to a shot of something else.

thanks for your advice. could you be more specific on what you said about the first photo, because I quite like the setting, even if the chick has a cell phone

I like the setting too. It's just that you're taking a picture of the sunset and having someone else taking a picture of the sunset with their cell phone camera at the same time makes it look like you didn't bother to check what's in your frame, which is one of the classic non-photographer photography mistakes. Just kinda ruins it for me.

You climbed mount Fuji but couldn't get any better photos than this........... that makes me rage slightly

At least you got to experience it though... that's pretty awesome

Sometimes I find myself getting caught up in trying to take good photos that I miss the experience. And when I look back at the photos I've taken, they just feel empty.

Use a hard-edge grad ND filter for scenes like these, it would prevent overexposure of the sky & underexposure of the earth.
