Cyber-Shot W300 Anonymous
My old digital camera broke a couple days ago, and I just want a point-and-shoot camera with HD capability and the looks. The W300 looks very good to me, but I heard that Sony's digicams aren't all that great. What's /p/'s take on this?

btw I live in Taiwan and it costs about U$395 here.

if you were shooting compact, why would you ever need 13 megapixels

This is true. Though I personally have a Canon A520, I only know what it can and cannot do. Outside of this and some other SD models, I can't truly make another recommendation without having owned every other p&s. My friend though does have a Sony Cybershot and it has a quick, bright flash which can be useful in some situations.

In the end, it's mainly about the images that you take using it. If you can get a good deal on a p&s camera, then I suggest getting it. Most consumer grade cameras are similar in performance for your average user. Though, some issues I'd look into first are red eye, and noise at higher ISOs. The flash on particular cameras may produce more red eye than others, even when red eye reduction is put on.
