I need a decent digital camera but don't have the money for DLSR. Two questions:

1. Best bridge camera/for the money? (S3 IS, sp550, etc.)

2. All the newer ones seem to suffer noise problems from too many pixels on a small sensor. I'd be fine with a 5mp camera if it had good ISO performance. Does such a camera exist in this category?

Pic related: seems to be the best in the past couple years from what I've read so far.

1. Older 5MP superzooms suffered from noise problems too. Resize an image from a 10MP camera to 5MP and you'll get the same amount of noise.

2. S3 IS isn't usually classified as a bridge camera, it's just a rather bulky point-and-shoot. Bridge cameras have longer zoom lenses and SLR-style control layout.

3. Bridge cameras are expensive and suck at both compactness and image quality; get a point-and-shoot or a DSLR depending on what you need more.

You can get a used digital SLR for the price of a bridge camera like that. Hit adorama.com, bhphotovideo.com, keh.com, or eBay. Look for a Nikon D50 or a Canon Digital Rebel. You might even be able to get a Rebel XT for that price. If you blow your wad on a bridge camera, you'll just end up regretting it when you eventually do move up to an SLR.

The hell? This is the first time I've ever heard anyone ever classify Canon's SxIS series as anything other than a bridge/superzoom. It's shaped like a small SLR and has a 12x zoom. Are you sure you're not thinking of something else? The G series, maybe?
