So /p/, I recently picked up a G9 from a friend ($250, steal or what?) but the problem is that there's an annoying line when I take pictures. It doesn't appear all the time though, which has me baffled.

Anyways, I looked at the lens and didn't see any apparent dust nor scratches, so what could it be? I looked at some of my friends pictures and it's in those too, but positioned differently.

Sensor dust
>> Anonymous
Uuugh, I was kind of hoping that's not what it'd be. Any idea how to clean it out?
It's a compact camera, so I can't easily get to the sensor... And dust shouldn't be able to either.
>> Anonymous
Anyone? I'd rather do it myself instead of having to pay someone else to fix it.

What line? Dust usually doesn't make straight lines- it makes a dark spot. But if it happens only at small apertures (with large depth of field), then it might be dust or something on the sensor or lens. Test it out.

Do you have any pictures of the line to show us?

It's the line to the right side of the picture, maybe a 60 degree angle from the fish's tail. The picture I uploaded doesn't really have a large depth of field, either. It does become much more visible at small apertures, though.
This is frustrating. I'd talk to my friend about it, but he's already ordered his new camera. Can't exactly force money out of him that he doesn't have.

In this picture the line is just under the window.

Ah, forgot to downsize the last picture. Here's another. The line's pretty visible on the right side of the garage.

you say you didn't see anything on the lens, but did you try cleaning it?

I would still mention it to your friend, too bad if he already ordered the camera he should have let you know about the problem if its internal.

You cant just remove the lens on a G9 if its something inside that needs fixed/cleaned.

Looks more like a piece of hair, but a dust spot can streak too.

I've wiped the lens off with some low fiber cleaning paper that I use on glasses and my computer monitor. I've also been told that pointing the lens down and blowing on works well too, so I also tried that.
Anything else I should try?

If you are sure the lens is clean, I'm not really sure if you can get into the camera yourself.

I would talk to your friend about the smudge or whatever it is..

I guess I'll have to.
Well, thanks for the help

oh shit, I see it now.... I was looking for something longer, but its extremely obvious if you know to look for it

it appears to be sensor dust, but god knows how it got in there! i'd be very careful if you open it up, because you'll expose the sensor to a lot more dust than is already inside the chamber. also, because it isn't an SLR camera, you might have some difficulty opening the curtains if you do decide to clean it yourself. most SLR's have a sensor cleaning mode, but i highly doubt the G9 does.

Fuck the smudge - great picture mate!

yeah probably sensor dust or a smudge, it might not be noticeable every time. I'd try taking it to a shop to get cleaned
