Oh, it's out of your budget? Just so you know, most of the money will be spent on buying lenses, cause that's what costs money, bodies are nothing compared to setups such as external flashes combined with primes and super zooms.
If people and general shooting is what you're after then go with the 18-70mm, great lens considering it's not deemed as fast.
Start saving money, get a 50mm f/1.8D, cheap but great for portraits and 'people' shots.
Just to tell you again, buying the D50 and the 18-70mm WILL NOT BE THE END OF IT... do not buy the SLR if you're not prepared to fork out thousands for lenses down the track.
If you're not that committed or dont want to spend that much money just get a Fuji Finepix, great Point and Shooter but still have features like RAW and manual settings.
