Olympus XA & RC reporting in. nice and compact but not so durable... even if I would get a quality metal body, it would be a lot bigger.

Sweet, I used to have an RC too (around a week ago until I gave it away). Nice little buggers. Here's a shot taken with the RC (a bit yellowish, but probably because of the film (Kodak Gold) or the lab (Kodak film on a Fuji Lab)

Canon Canonet QL17 GIII, which I don't use nearly enough. It's loaded up with boring film right now (Kodak ISO400, I believe) while I've mostly been playing around with more interesting films (e.g., Delta 3200, Velvia, Neopan 100), so I need to burn through that roll so I will have cause to use it some more.

what is the difference between a rangefinder and a slr?

A rangefinder has two little windows on the front, one for the rangefinder mechanism and one for the viewfinder. You look straight through the viewfinder, and the image from the rangefinder is superimposed on the view from the viewfinder thanks to a moving mirror that's linked to the focus mechanism.

To focus a rangefinder camera, you match up the superimposed rangefinder image with the viewfinder image of the thing you want to focus on.

Advantages: No reflex mirror means a rangefinder can be quieter, smaller, faster, and less prone to camera shake.
Disadvantages: No way to check depth of field visually. The up-and-to-the-left viewfinder rather than an SLR's through-the-lens viewfinder means that you have parallax issues, especially closeup. More complex to make a rangefinder with interchangeable lenses because you need to compensate for the lens focal length in the viewfinder. Rangefinder focusing at telephoto lengths is nigh impossible (anything longer than about 135 is a no-go). Modern rangefinders are way the fuck more expensive than one would expect.

Yep, modern rangefinders like the Epson RD1 and Leica M8 is almost impossible to acquire for ordinary folks. The old and cheap rangefinders you see in thrift stores aren't so bad though, and they still manage to take pictures with decent image quality provided you give 'em a little CLA.

Right now, I find myself using my rangefinder more than my digital camera. Collecting them can be a bit fun, too.

That pic makes me want to have a Zorki. It's just bad that these Russian cameras are hard to find in this part of the globe.
