So I am currently beginning to get into SLR's, right now I have a D80 + Kit Lens and want to know what I should go for next, at the moment I am looking at a Sigma 30 F/1.4 and a friend has recommended to me a Nikkor 50mm F/1.8.. what would be the main differences between those two, and would it be better or any different if I went from the 50mm F/1.8 to F/1.6 or F/1.4

Have also been suggested a 18-200mm VR but see no use for it now due to lack of need for it.

put kit lens at 30mm then at 50mm

see which fov you like more

i don't know enough about Nikon to compare the 50mm's but the sigma 30/1.4 is pretty badass

I have, and I've looked over every bit of it and still getting mixed reviews on both, half the people I talk to say the 50mm is a must have, and the other half say the 30mm is amazing. and me still being new to this can't tell what I would need or what aperature id need to go for or would use most often.

You shouldn't be buying a new lens then.

get the 50mm then, it will be the cheapest

you have nothing to lose

The only reason not to own the 50mm f/1.8 is if you already own a 50mm f/1.4 or 50mm f/1.2 or 50mm f/1.0.

or 1.7, or 2.0 or 2.5
