What is up with all this hype over photos of kids? They're possibly the most boring subject you could shoot (as in take pictures of). There are people here on flickr that upload hundreds of random photos of their kids, for what reason? And what's funny is some of these people are the same people that complain about video on flickr, complaining that too many stupid videos are gonna be posted.

Anyway, these babie photos just go up on explore because other people or babie photographers comment and fav them because they think it's cute and heart-warming. It's almost creepy, especially when they dress them up.

Take this one for example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bethjansenphotography/2731511041/
Its not a bad photo, I kind of like the soft depth of field but they have lost detail in the skin from some kind of processing side effect, and the huge watermark is awful.

Its on explore front page right now, look at the comments. They are ALL either women or more babie photo uploading people.

Maybe it's just me, maybe because I don't have kids and I don't know what it's like to have a child of my own. I definitly don't find any of the photos adorable. Even though i'm a huge fan of portrait photography, I've always found pictures of kids incredibly dull. That and wedding photos. Its as if they can never really make an interesting photo, and always appear to have that same old effect.

Am I alone here?

While i agree with what your saying, this IS a good photo...

Anyone hired to do a portrait of a baby for a family would struggle to get anything half this good,

So yeah, 99% of baby photos are utter shit family snapshots... But not this one

That's because kids are so very boring. You've seen one, you've seen them all.

Keep in mind that people on flickr are idiots, and most of the ones commenting on baby photos (or kid photos) have kids themselves. In fact, all they really care about is circle-jerking to how beautiful their kids are. Yeah, it's annoying.

The example photo burns my eyes. It's somebody who had a lucky shot and sent it through too many photoshop filters. It's downright creepy.

Flickr is ruled by popularity, not quality. You want quality, you have to find a photographers' community and be ready for harsh and honest opinions. But the stuff popular amongst them is truly spectacular.
