hey /p/

im heaps intruiged about light writing

but how do i do it!?

i know the whole long exposure bulb thing but what is a light source that they use!?
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
Any bright tourch, led types seem to be favourable at the moment due to very high intensity discharge.

you can do it with any source really, just the brighter it is the faster you need to go.
>> Anonymous
Get a torch with a removable front cover. LED torches are the best since they usually have a very narrow beam and don't produce a huge corona. Cut out some "filters" from different coloured plastic sheets that you can put inside the cover.
Then bulb and paint and remember to move around while painting unless you want to yourself as a blurry smear in the picture as well. Remember to turn off torch when you're walking around.

thanks butterfly,

i guess ill just need to experiment it,

Dunno what you mean by curtain flash but that will have been done by using a flash to bring out the guy holding the lead, the guy doing the drawing probably came out cos of the streetlights or whatever.

Sup /p/.

I bought two LED torches/emergency light/car window breaker thingys coz they were cheap, and used WB to change the color of the white LED to blue in this picture. Two off camera flashes were used, and I marked a spot for the model to jump at and start with the exposure with the flash to get the angle right (i.e. just lighting her sides) and then try without the flash but with the torches. This is inherently harder because you need to balance everything, flash output, length of exposure, timing of the jump, how much she moves the torch, etc etc. And yep, use rear curtain flash for these types of things, so it fires at the last moment of movement, so it looks right.

Light writing is the new... I don't know.
Something really fucking gay that talentless hacks want to try.

Also it looks like shit and we don't need threads about this every fucking day.

It's possible for light writing to look good. It just takes lots and lots of practice, patience, and planning. Way beyond what pro-wannabes with D40's and 400D's are capable of.

Good light drawing: I have a very good picture of what I want it to look like and we're going to be doing it over and over until it's perfect even if it takes us multiple nights.

Bad light drawing: Ooooh look at the lines!! Let's try something else!!

That said, I have yet to see a really good photo that involves light writing.

Light writing is a gimmick, it is sometimes amusing.

Light painting is more interesting. It is also one of the few ways blind people can participate in photography, see:

I have used a few torches, LED's, mobiles... Depending on what you use you'll have to set ISO, shutter and aperture also depending on what you want to do.

I was painting the whole time, i keep moving around and the aperture is really high, only static stuff appears in the image.

Thanks for the compliment :3 I've always wanted a camera with BULB exposure

how the hell do you achieve 182 seconds D:
>> Anonymous
>>169504
bulb.
>> Anonymous
>>169146

Come on, you have to admit, this is fucking awesome.
>> hatefag
>>169513

I will admit that it is MUCH, MUCH better than 90% of the light writing I see.
The key thing here is the great color balance. The light looks wonderful, almost liquid at the bottom, and the shadowy room really adds to it.

That said, the setting doesn't really work as well as it could. I HATE the angle that the room is shot at, and wish the photographer had moved the fucking camera over 1-2 feet to the right. Also I find that I'm more interested in the room than I am in the light drawing, partly because the drawing is crude, and partly because the room is too interesting.

My absolute FAVORITE thing about this image is the depth. I love that the fire is further back than the mantle, and that I can perceive the overlap and the distance between where each element must have been drawn.

There could definitely be a few improvements and it's still a genre I hate, but overall I guess I like this image.
>> Anonymous
how do you use the bulb?

my camera keeps finishes capturing the image no matter what light setting im in, in no more than 1 second.
>> Anonymous
>>169646

you probably need to change the bulb in your camera, sounds like its just about dead and needs replaced. For your camera, try a model N00-B because they last longer

rofl.

>how do you use the bulb?
No idea what camera you have, but on a nikon, when you increase the shutter speed to 30.. but keep going - it'll turn onto "bulb"
Which will open the shutter for however long you please.

light..writing?

Just use a small flashlight, and a balloon. You can cover the flashlight with your hand to get the intensity you want, and the balloons help with coloring.
>> Anonymous
Sorry if this is an obvious question but I've never fiddled around with a dSLR long enough to see. Can long exposures be manually stopped with a rear curtain flash?

For example I wanna do a shot of a martial artist performing a move in the air with long motion blur but having him clear in the air. Is it possible to open shutter while he leaps from the ground and as soon as he's in the pose I want in the air, I close the shutter right after a flash. In other words, I don't have to time it right with the camera.
>> Anonymous
>>170655

Set the camera to Manual, set the exposure speed to Bulb with the correct f stop, then put your flash in Rear Sync.

You can press the shutter button, have him jump, then right at the moment you want release the button (the flash will fire first.)
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>170656
Or, for even better awesomeness, get an external flash and trigger it manually at the right time from a location other than front-on.
