Go into quickmask mode. Select the gradient tool, setting it to go from black to transparent. Using this, mask the edges of the image such that the selection feathers off as you go into the photo from the border. That is, drag the gradient from the edge toward the center. Play with this until you get used to it. When you've done this, exit quickmask mode. You will now have a selection. Go layer>new adjustment layer>curves. Drag the midpoint down.
Voila.
