Extension tubes

do these cheap pieces of plastic actually work?
>> phesarnion
a resounding YES! The ones which offer meter coupling and aF coupling are awesome. Extension tubes are great if you can't afford a full blown macro lens.

changing focus in simple lenses is just a matter of moving the objective lens further from focal plane for closer focus, so in that case certainly. some of the more highly desgined lenses have moving internal elements, sometimes more than one, and i'm not sure if you can use this simple technique for them. i guess they're so awesome already you probably dont need to, but if anyone knows how en extender would work on one of those constant focal length or IF lenses i would like to know, plox

Fist hand experience: they work on primes, zooms, constant aperture (i'm guessing that's what you meant, rather than fixed focal length) and IF lenses.

Since you're moving the lens further away from the film plane, aberrations become much more pronounced, but if you're willing to sacrifice a little image quality, they're a nice accessory for a tight budget.

o rly?
i'd have guessed the opposite cause the focal plane would be further from the obective in that case.
oh well

A pro guy I know told me this, but he could have just been justifying the $$$$$$ he spent.
