1/30 of a second at 300mm? I hope you had a massively sturdy tripod and a cable release before you start bitching about the sharpness of your pictures.

What is this bullshit supposed to be testing anyway? You can't read the tape measure, so you're not effectively checking for back focus and your test pattern isn't really useful at measuring anything. If you're going to be a measurbator, you should at least set up your tests so that the results are meaningful.

Anyway, it looks pretty sharp to me. The big asterisk is a little soft, but the rest of the bottles are sharp, so I'm lead to believe there is some user error going on here. Even so, it's still quite usably sharp.

Seriously though, if this is really a problem for you, quit photography. Right now. You just don't get it.

I suppose I just didn't handle presentation of this stuff properly :D

In morning: I finally got pissed off and started to "research" why MOST of the shots with 70-300 VR are soft.

I first thought that it would be a focus problem.. so out I go and try. Seems I didn't know what to do, but at least I found the "official" test chart.. and according to that, the focus seemed to be ok.

Anyways.. if the focus is supposed to be OK, why I get so many soft pictures? I know the lens can produce sharp results (like the one included), but most of the time pictures are soft, and I can't figure out a reason why.

Is it because of F5.6? Is it too dark to guess the right focus in most situations? I mean is the D80's AF sensors so poor that they don't really work at F5.6 anymore?

If so, what's the point of selling f5.6 glass.. if they can't focus properly most of the time?

Or maybe I'm just doing something really wrong with this 70-300?

You really don't grasp the concept of trying to prove your point, do you?
1) Completely different lens, way to compare apples and oranges
2) It's RIDICULOUSLY easy to have SOMETHING in-focus with that wide of a z-axis, so you're really an idiot
3) It's still not that sharp, honestly. Horribly shallow DOF, a lens flaw.

Yes, Nikon definitely still sucks. Here, have some Minolta 17-35/2.8 G glass sharpness. Lol you just keep wasting your money!

I shot 20 pictures @ 135mm, wide open. With flash (& flash af illuminator, or whatever that red light is), to ensure that the images aren't blurry :0

Single shot mode, center focus point.. subject in center of the frame. 1/20 is in perfect focus :E 3 others nearly there.

I tried same with my 50/1.8, 17/20 were in good focus.

Focus didn't hunt once, so possibly it can't be too dark? :-p It would be nice to consider what criterias focus must meet that the af sensor decides it's "OK" and lets the user take a picture.

Maybe I should try the same tomorrow in daylight. Altough I don't see the point. I'm pretty sure it'll look the same..

Pic related.

turn off VR when using a tripod

Turn off VR when its not needed. Many of the photos your posting are perfectly fine, theres nothing to complain about.

For example this, nothing wrong with this photo. Considering the equipment you have _this is what you can expect_ in good light. Try to always shoot in iso 100 when theres this much daylight though.. D80 isnt the best for noise control.

Yes. I posted that and the singer pictures as examples what I'm expecting from the camera & lens.

For some reason I just get too many horribly out of focus pictures, without a single part in focus :x Sometimes dozens of pictures one after another...

It doesn't feel logical that the af system says it has focus, altough it clearly has none. Even my 50/1.8 with age old screw drive AF focuses at least SOMEWHERE, and most of the time I can see where it focused even if it didn't focus there where I wanted..

But if there's just one subject in the fucking photo, I want it to be sharp. It's not like DOF is narrow with 200/5.6 or 300/5.6 ... like it is with some macro lenses etc.

And theres several reviews like this saying the same thing.

Conclusion, youve got a bad lens, sorry. Sell it and buy another model.
