Hey /p/ I need your help.
I there are inumerous posts like mine but I need help buying a camera and going to dpreview isn't really helping me out.
Long story short I'm thinking about buying Nikon D40 because it's cheap. So what i would like to know if it is a good camera for the price and if there's anything better of the same price.

Thank you for all the help you can provide!

it wont autofocus on non AF-S lenses, so you get no autofocusing on fast primes right now except for a sigma 28mm f/2.8 i think. you may consider a D50 or D70(s). both are just as good but can autofocus with non AF-S lenses. D50 also has very good iso performance. and they are pretty cheap now since they are discontinued models that have been replaced.

dont buy it

the D40 is designed for the consumer who would otherwise buy a P&S. By that i mean they'd never take the kit lens off or if they do, it's to put the 55-200 on.

If you're serious about moving on with photography eventually do consider a D50 and D70s. If you're happy just snapping away with ease like a P&S but with superior IQ, then get this one.

At least get the D40X for just a bit more, then.

not to dissuade you from getting the d40 but the pentax k100d is cheaper than the d40 at amazon. Not sure if that's true of other places, but you might want to check it out. Accepts a similarly giant amount of old (read: cheap) lenses but can actually meter with them~
you can even use the in-body VR with them~

ignore this, the D40X is overpriced and gives you nothing but a few MP over the D40 which on a camera like that is irrelevent. Get a D40 then use the money you saved on NOT getting the X to get a prime.

Hm, I remembered the D40x having some major improvements over the D40, actually making it a fair competitor to the Canon 400D / Rebel XTi. Canon still wins though.

It's a little faster. 3fps vs. 2.5fps. Other than that and the resolution, though, same camera.

Stop giving Canon users a bad name. Also: The XTi/400D is in a higher price bracket than the D40.

I think you should look into a pentax K100D as a first SLR. First off, it uses the same exact sensor as the D40 so there's going to be little image quality to begin with. You also get an image stabilizer which will help you save a ton on expensive lenses. Also, if you like primes (which you should), Pentax's selection is really unbeatable. I like my FA 50 1.4 :).

I bought the D40x about three months ago. I upgraded to a D80 just yesterday. Wait a little bit and save the extra $$$

The D40x is a great little camera, but it's limited with the lenses it can use.

go for the Rebel XTi. its a great camera to start with, and the lenses are cheaper than the Nikon ones.
