Hello! When you go to a store and see a bargain bin with a bunch of items at low prices, the first thing you ask yourself is, "What's wrong with these?"

You should ask yourself the same question when you see a bargain basement photographer! Craigslist is flooded with amateur photographers calling themselves wedding photographers and advertising their services for bargain basement prices.

Ask yourself before booking one of these people, "What's wrong with their product? Why is it so inexpensive?"

Many reasons: inexperience, no formal photography training, non professional equipment, no insurance, no relationships with professional labs, doing photography for "fun" as a side job, and the list goes on and on.

I ask you Brides, do you want your precious, once in a lifetime wedding photos taken by a bargain basement photographer? Did you get your dress, ring, cake and flowers from the bargain bin at Walmart?

Are you paying $2000 for your dress, $1500 on your flowers, $1000 on your cake, but only want to spend $500 on your photos? What do you still have a week later? A year? Ten years? A dress which you won't ever (hopefully) wear again and your PHOTOS!

Just something to think about. Hire a real professional and be happy you are going to get great photos and help keep a local photographer in business. These people are trying to put food on the table through their photography business, not make an extra $300 on a weekend to pay for their Canon digital rebel.

To Bargain Basement Photographers: What are you thinking? You are killing the entire industry in Portland and surrounding area! I just saw an ad for $300 for an 8 hour wedding! You have meetings with bride and groom before. Then 2-3 hours of preperation, setting up and travel time. Then a minimum of 3 hours post processing, you are making about TEN (10) bucks an hour! Barely Minimum wage! (not even mentioning the cost of your equipment.)

BRIDES and GROOMS, would you hire a minimum wage worker to photograph your wedding? I sure hope not!

Correction:
Are you paying $1000 for your dress, $0 on your flowers, $200 on your cake (but may spring for cute figurines that will be kept in the figurine collection in perpetuity afterward), but only want to spend $500 on your photos? What do you still have a week later? A year? Ten years? A dress which you wear frequently to formal occasions (and make excuses to have formal occasions for...) and your photos. Oh, and the memories. And the marriage. And stories. But still! Spend thousands on photos because that is necessary for your Princess (tm) wedding! Otherwise nothing will work and you will be sad forever.

At least, that's my plan~ish. Then again, I actually am friends with decent wedding photographers, don't want a giant wedding and am engaged to someone allergic to flowers.

Also, delicious.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you, but I don't think people traditionally wear wedding dresses to anything but the wedding itself.
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>182578
Yes, traditionally.

However, if we're buying expensive clothing, it's damn well getting dragged out regularly. Hence, a dress that can be worn somewhere other than a wedding. Also, dressing formally is fun. There's something quite wonderful about a group of people randomly going formal. At least, we enjoy it.
>> Anonymous
>>182580
yeah that may look odd. formal dress is quite different from the types of dresses you wear in a wedding. unless of course you get a style of dress that isnt normally used for a wedding or something.
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>182583
It's somewhere in between. Can pass as a very nice wedding dress, can (probably, imo) pass as a very nice formal dress.

The truly traditional wedding dress...urk. No thanks. I don't think I could go through with a truly traditional wedding, actually. Too...insane.
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>182583
non-traditional wedding dresses are getting really popular, anyway. A lot of the time those sorts of dresses will be worn for other special occasions.

whenever I get married Im not wearing a traditional white dress...I hate wedding dresses so much it isn't even funny.
>> Anonymous
you're all nuts. i want my wife wearing beautiful, flowing white when i tell her in front of the world that i promise to forsake all others. i am horrified at the thought of my love trying to get married to me in a dress that she might one day wear to a cocktail party for an event at her job.
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>182602
I'm sorry for striving to be practical instead of a trophy wife. Seriously...what you're wearing doesn't matter at all as long as the wedding and feelings are for real. Get married naked for all I care, as long as you truly love each other then screw the traditional stuff.
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
If I demanded that my fiancee->wife wear white, I don't think she'd say "Yes."

Just depends how traditional you are. We sure as hell aren't. It'll have been close to five years since we started dating when we get married, and almost two years after the engagement. It's permanent, yes - but that's probably the most traditional aspect of the upcoming marriage, other than the classic "aisle, father gives bride away, wedding->reception, etc" aspect. Still deciding on where to get married. Our city sucks for nice marriage places :/

I actually saw a photo of a nudist wedding by a reasonably famous photog. The groom was wearing nothing but a top hat, and the bride was wearing a veil and nothing else.

Don't remember who it was by at the moment, and I'm at work, but I might look it up this afternoon when I get home.

The thing is, why the fuck is having pro quality photos taken a requirement for a decent wedding? We didn't even have a dedicated photographer (the dress, the ornaments, and most of the foods were self-made too), and frankly, I don't think it made the even any less special. We got the guests who were taking photos to send their shots to us, so we've got plenty of ok photos that will allow us to reminiscence as much as we want.

I know pro photos are infinitely better as photos, but I don't think that brings much extra value to something that essentially serves the same function as a holiday snapshot.

I know you may have a different opinion if wedding photography is what you do for a living, but still...
>> Anonymous
>>182684

Agreed.

I know many that hire photographers but also leave cheap disposable cameras at all the tables so the guests can take random photos and then its a bit of a surprise to see what they took. There's bound to be a few decent ones and a few crappy ones but ask any real photographer what matters most.

The quality? or the moment that the photograph captures?
>> Anonymous
Theres a lot of pressure by family and friends (even ones you don't know yet) To get good or at least, a comprehensive collection of wedding pictures. I think thats more the case than the actual bride and groom caring about getting pictures of themselves.

Weddings = overrated anyway.
>> Anonymous
>>182717
Peer pressure? Maybe, but I really don't find it that hard to believe that there are just some people out there who would like a quality set of pictures of one of the most important days of their lives. And the best chance one has of making that happen is to hire a good photographer.
>> Anonymous
I would ask for some of their older works before hiring.

This anon got married recently. We went with a pro. The quality of the pictures was *way* better than what any of the guests sent us from their point and shoot cams.

>>182752
This is pretty standard. When we were looking for a photographer we visited about 5 or 6 in the area. The first thing each of them did was show us a portfolio.

>>182687
I've heard horror stories of this. At some weddings the rolls of film come back full of shots of random stupid crap (I know for a fact that's what I'd get if I trusted my friends with this). Also if you're going to pay for all those disposable cameras and processing why not fork out a little more for one of the cheaper pros that OP was raging about?

>>182602
Hey, that's good for you, but my idea for a wedding is much different.
Me, my bride, her parents (mine are dead), a best man and a maid of honor, and some sort of non-religious officially (like a captain of a ship or such). Short ceremony on a beach, then a fancy dinner. I'd wear khakis and a hawaiian shirt, she'd be in a nice sundress. Any photographer we'd have would probably be a buddy of mine who takes nice photos. And that's about it. I figure flying the dude out to hawaii would be fair compensation. All that I'd really care about is decent photos.

Not everybody has a huge budget to spend on a wedding. I think paying more than 2 grand for the wedding alone is dumb, but some people want a fairytale wedding on a shoestring budget. If they want their $10/hour photos, so be it. They don't have to be bad, and even if they are, they're getting what they paid for.

Not that "professional" wedding photographers always produce good results, either.

>>182771
Nobody produces good photos all the time. My delete button is the most pushed button, second only to the shutter. It's just that the quality of their "good" (not deleted) photos are way much better than the quality of other's "good" photos.

>>182781
psh, I'm so pro I don't even know where my delete button is.

Photos are different for everyone. Frankly, if I ever get married I'm just going to pick a well lit place, put my shit in "P" set ISO to 1000 and tell my friends to go to town. For me, pictures invoke memories, they aren't there to replace it. At the same time I understand that some people need 5 trillion perfect pictures of their special day to validate it. Thats fine, in fact it's great. More business for those experienced pros who know what they are doing so they can stop bitching about it when people don't hire them and go with some cheep ass.
>> Anonymous
I'm a pro whos getting married pretty soon, and im not hiring anyone. Our portrait? I can set that up just fine, all I have to do is find some kid at the wedding to press the shutter.

For reception/ceremony pics we're buying about a dozen low end point and shoots and giving them away as gifts. It'll still cost less than hiring a pro, and ill have all the digital files and more of them.
>> Anonymous
I also forgot to mention another advantage to p&s cameras is the guests aren't inhibited by some douchebag coming up to their table and telling them to smile. The photos are for real.
>> Anonymous
hey man, nothing wrong with a rebel. I use the 400d for all my pro shoots and keep a 30d as my backup. I'm a small dude so the 400d fits in my hands perfectly. As long as you get the job done right, does it matter what you have at your disposal? I've seen some people use p&s for some sweet as shots. (not professional wedding shots) but still..
