hey /p/
how can i get the leica look without spending the leica price?
Any good alternatives to get into rangefinders?
Any post processing i can do to my photos to make them look more "leica-ey?"
>> photon
I cant tell what makes a photo leica like....you can add a border if that helps.
>> Anonymous
Maybe you're referring to the bokeh that leica lens have? I don't really know then, buy a cheap leica mount rangefinder and buy leica lenses.

go go Voigtlander Bessas

>how can i get the leica look without spending the leica price?

The various Panasonic Lumix point and shoots have lenses designed by Leica, but mass produced in some factory in Japan.

>Any good alternatives to get into rangefinders?

Plenty. Cameraquest.com has a bunch of information on rangefinders. Old compact rangefinders are probably the cheapest way; I'd say the best way is an old, used M with the framelines you need. It's not like buying a new Leica or even an M6. Other options include new Voigtlander and Zeiss Ikon options, old Leica screwmount bodies, and Russian copies thereof.

>Any post processing i can do to my photos to make them look more "leica-ey?"

No, not really. The look of a lens comes down to things that can't be imitated digitally. Sure, you can sharpen and add a little microcontrast, but different lenses still have different bokeh, different ways of drawing the picture overall, different types of sharpness, different ways of handling flare, etc.

But honestly? As great as great glass is, your best bet for making good photographs is to stop fighting your equipment and trying to make it a lens it's not in Photoshop. Work with it or get a new one.

It looks like kodachrome paper borders. Go buy some Kodachrome and get it developed. Scan for win.

Or copypaste borders from some other image...

Bokeh in Leica's lenses may attribute to the "leica look", but surely there isn't anything in OP's picture you can't do with a $5 film SLR.

You can always do post-processing to imitate the look of film. You won't be able to get the same dynamic range, but you can get pretty close in terms of color.
>> Anonymous
>>169069
"Of film," but imitating specific films is very difficult.
>> Anonymous
>>169069
Also, color slide film has a very limited dynamic range. Five stops, usually.
>> Anonymous
Hey guys (not op here), Kodachrome's a bitch to get developed, isnt it?
>> Anonymous
>>169101
Well theres only one place in the world that does it anymore and getting kodachrome is even harder these days.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>169138
Not really. That one place also sells it. And you can get it expired from places like Adorama and B&H last I checked..
>> Anonymous
I don't think OP knows what makes photos look leica-ey, and just wants to post process to make it look like film.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>169006
Why not? A FED-2 and a bashed up Summitar/Summar/Summarit won't run more than $300, and will have all the "Leica look" OP can stomach.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Ah, I was thinking Leica M rather than Leica screw-mount.

I shall have to investigate this Fed-2. Seem to be pretty cheap on eBay. Neat!

What i meant was that its been discontinued and supplies are drying out. Theres no way to get it after all the old stocks are sold out.

At least not any fast and easy way. Its very likely that some people will keeps selling few rolls in ebay once in a while.

jsut buy some fast glass

i got a Canon t70 and a 50mm f/1.4 lens for $120 off ebay plus a few other lenses

Why kodak still lists kodachrome then, if it's discontinued: http://www.kodak.com/global/en/professional/products/colorReversalIndex.jhtml?id=0.2.26.14.11&lc

?

Also there's still kodachrome for sale on local supermarkets. I've checked them regularly and they still get new rolls with fresh dates...

Of course Kodak may be canning old stock, but they can still last for many years..

so sure??

Fair enough. I was just saying that getting it is merely *equally as hard* as getting it developed nowadays.
>> Anonymous
>>169196

Do I need to go out and take a photo? :P I don't have any rolls myself, because it's shit expensive (14,95€ including developement), while I can shoot normal slide/negative film 0,50€/roll + development..
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

That's Ektachrome. Completely different beast.
>> Anonymous
>>169199

Also I need to pay 1€ postal to Swizerland, then they mail the stuff to USA from there. I'm not sure whether I could just mail it straight to usa, maybe if I tried it out some day...

Only "difficult" part is the waiting: it takes a couple of weeks to get a roll developed.

Buy it up, man. It's sure as hell not in US stores anymore. The last ever Kodachrome expires in September of this year. It's worth it.

To be fair, there's also some agfa there... how long have they been out of business? :P

Anttila a local chain in Finland, they've been selling Kodachrome and other film for ages. In good old times I heard they've also sold chemicals and other stuff too. Nowdays the range of film-related stuff is pretty limited there, but still, it's the only place I know where I can buy Kodachrome :-)

I don't know. I saw some new-looking Agfa with fresh dates in a local camera shop, so maybe someone is making new Agfa-branded film...

There's some Konica Centuria in the photo too, altough seemingly without Konica's logo.

Also, I bought 20 rolls of Sensia 100 for 10€, it expired in 2005-08, but was stored in cold, so it's probably fine. If not, I can always crossprocess it.

.. and I bought 38 rolls of 135-36 100asa Agfa Vista from Nordfoto too. 1,36€/roll + 5€ (shared) postal fees

Keep in mind, though: for some reason, the Fed bodies have a slight focusing error when used with Leitz-made lenses. Fine with cheap Russian lenses, fine at smaller apertures, but don't expect to throw that Leitz f/1.5 lens on there and use it wide open.
>> Anonymous
>>169230
Fed bodies use Leica screw mount, but the rangefinder coupler behaves like a Contax one, with a slightly different travel distance. There are a few workshops that can retool the rangefinder to operate correctly with Leica glass - but you lose full compatibility with Soviet lenses.

99% of the "Leica look" is sheer hype and bullshit. They make great lenses, yes, but so do plenty of other companies.

>99% of the "Leica look" is sheer hype and bullshit.

Not true at all. Leica lenses tend, for whatever reasons, to have a similar, distinctive look.

A similar example is the three f/1.4 Canon primes currently in production (24, 35, 50), which make almost exactly the same look as each other, although it's usually not quite this pronounced. Especially across decades of lens design.

>They make great lenses, yes, but so do plenty of other companies.

QFT. Which I think is much closer to what you're trying to say: that Leica lenses aren't magic, but are very good, as are other lenses produced by (among others) Zeiss, Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Minolta/Sony, Fuji, Mamiya, Angénieux, Cooke, Schneider Kreuznach, and even "budget" companies like Sigma and Tamron.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>169412
Yeah, I think it's mostly a product of making really, really pleasant to use cameras, which means that the best photographers will buy them.
>> Even_Steven !!rUmVORA7JiP

>Not true at all. Leica lenses tend, for whatever reasons, to have a similar, distinctive look.

Its because Leica focused on lens micro-contrast above all else. This is the reason why they have more of a "3d" look that other lenses usually dont.

Well, there's that. There's also their distinctive bokeh, which seems to me (i.e. from my own eyes) the most similar to normal human eye bokeh. Anyone think similarly?

>so maybe someone is making new Agfa-branded film...

Think that's about right; some store at my city has Agfa film (slide at least) listed on their website. Haven't gone there to confirm it, but it might be true.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>169161
Alright, Bessa R2 and one of the lenses I previously listed/an Elmar-M 2.8, still just a couple hundred more depending on whether you're good at finding deals.

>>169425
My Leica lenses aren't giving me no Leica look. Though I admit that may be because of scanning issues - once I get my bodies CLA'ed and get access to a decent scanner after my exams, I can try to compare my Zuiko 35/2.8 and Leitz Summaron 35/3.5, though god knows how unscientific that is.

Oh I know how about this:
http://rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53811&highlight=50mm+lens+comparison

I'm too lazy to reread all of this but you can search for a Leica look here.

>Not true at all. Leica lenses tend, for whatever reasons, to have a similar, distinctive look.

Only if you're splitting hairs. They're great lenses, but the Leica look remains vastly composted of hype.
