Stay away from:
Panasonic Lumix (DMC-FX7 was great, but DMC-FX9 sucked hard, mechanical problems, bad image).
Sony Cyber-Shot.

I've had poor picture quality issues with both, and mechanical issues with all Panasonic cameras.

Can someone recommend me a good camera brand? Cannon?

Also avoid BeachCameras.com, I think they shipped me a refurbished Panasonic Lumix.

Canon or Nikon is popular around here. But Canon really gives you a bigger bang for your dollar if you're going to buy a digital point and shoot camera. Usually they have a 4x optical zoom versus 3x for the same price. But size and comfort are also factors you have to consider too.

I only buy from brick and mortar stores, unless I'm ordering from B&H online (even though I could easily travel to their superstore). It's easier to complain if you have a problem and most of the time returning it for a refund goes pretty smoothly as well. That's just me though, I've always had a slight mistrust with online stores in general.
