Got me an IR filter today.

Now I need a camera that doesn't suck to mount it on.

(The IR filters on my Rebel XTi and PowerShot A95 are too good. My G1 has a shitty IR filter, but it also has a shitty sensor behind that IR filter...)

Rebel XTi's are probably the worst camera for slapping an IR filter on the front of. D70s and D50 = great with it, F1.8, 1/100-1/200 range at ISO 1600 takes a properly exposed picture (In the daytime). Also its easy to set custom White Balances on those camera's. Autofocus is still fuxxored though

Pic related (except its at f3.5 and the kit lens) Handheld BTW

Is this with the infra filter on and in color? Is that how you get this type of effect or is that a shop?
>> Anonymous
>>61522

It's a colorized IR photo. This is a somewhat common practice.
>> Anonymous !MjcMqTX/iM
>>61529
It's not. It's a channel swap, colors are in the original as well. OP just doesn't know how to set custom white balance correctly for IR.

It's okay, you'll learn, and you'll love it.
Because green plans / trees / petals and stuff are white in IR, you should set your manual focus to one of those. It will give the best results. Afterwards you might have a yellow sky, depending on your camera. Things like this can be changed with the Channel Mixer in photoshop (i.e. under Red put Red on -100, and Blue on +100, under Blue put Red on +100, and Blue on -100.) This should give some fine results. Just play around with it.
Enjoy it, it's fun to do.
(Picture slightly related, my best IR photo thus far.)

Ya this guy is right, Just swapped colors in the Tree and the Sky, (Invert new layer, Layer blending - luminousity or color)
You just need a custom WB to get decent pics.

I don't get more than a black image if I have less then 60 seconds of exposure. What am I doing wrong?
>> Anonymous !MjcMqTX/iM
>>61585
Not all camera's allow good IR photography. Also, some IR filters are too strong and will only pass pure IR light, which will take longer exposers.

Please do post them. Which filter did you get?

Hoya R72. Because you know what they say about any photographic equipment: The cheapest stuff is usually the absolute best there is.

Okay, looking a little more, you've got it in shutter-priority mode. Put it in full manual and choose your aperture and shutter speed manually. The light metering hardware is in front of the sensor's IR filter, so it sees a bunch of infrared light coming in and meters for full infrared daylight, most of which is cut out by the sensor's IR filter.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
Oh man. You know how when you got your first real camera and figured out how to reduce your DoF and every crap photo you took made you think you were the second coming of Ansel Adams? And then you learned a bit more (like f'rinstance that Ansel hated shallow DoF) and got more experience and realized that your pictures were pretty crappy?

I'm totally at that first stage with this IR filter. These pictures look fucking awesome so far.

I would say no, cause theres a lot of shit IR pics out there, This one I don't like because its just some random branches anda few leaves.

Also really shows how hard it is to get enough light through to the sensor on an XTI, ISO 400, 1/3 shutter speed and f2.0 for a slightly underexposed pic, during daytime? Is DARK.

Pic in example = ISO 200, F8 (so 4 stops darker than yours so far) And 1/1.3 of a second (One stop lighter)

Basically the D50 has at least 3 stops more light let into the camera at the same settings then. (I say at least since mine was exposed with slightly blown whites,)

Thanks, I'm usually too lazy to bring around a tripod to get decent wide angle shots, So when I do its rare, Most of the time the 50mm f1.8 and ISO 1600 do me fine for handheld.
This one, Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and HAndheld.
A little pushing it, Also the Tamron develops quite the center hotspot with any direct light hitting the lens... But a 67mm IR filter is cheaper than a 77mm one. (For my 24mm f1.8)

Did you notice everyone you take is a little out of focus? It's fine with my p&s, but from what I've heard the focus for SLRs in IR is just a little bit different then RL focus, therefor you'd have to manual focus to get it perfect. Also, try bringing a tripod and use long exposures to get more detail.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>61990
Oh yeah, forgot about the focus issues.

Hrm. That means I pretty much have to use my 35/2 since that's the only lens in my Canon arsenel that has the IR focus marked (since I sure as hell can't focus by eye with an R72 on there)
>> Anonymous
>>61997
You could try focusing on infinity if you need a different lens. It would be different than normal focusing on infinity, but it might be worth a shot.

People show up cool looking in IR, Try getting people to pose for you (And stay really still)

If you have a flash, you can use that aswell, But be prepared to fire it multiple times at full power, OR just use it for atouch of fill.

I bought an Singh Ray I-Ray Filter which I have seen good shots from with other cameras. I have a Pentax K100D. If I convert the IR photos to B/W they look wonderful. I just cant get any false color w/ the K100D. I have heard of having the "hot mirror" removed from the sensor but have not found anyone that knows how.
>> Anonymous !MjcMqTX/iM
>>62152
That camera only shows 700-1100 nano, that's rather heavy blocking compared to the Hoya filter we all seem to use here. Can you post an image that hasn't been converted to BW to show us how the false colors look? Do not ever remove the 'hot mirror' as you call it from the camera. It has to be replaced with a small block of equal size / thickness, which can be hard to find, and your non-IR pictures will be useless after swapping the 'hot mirror'.

>>62125
Race stripes are like so 2003, nowadays it's the trick to make swirly patterns on your camera to make everything look good. I can clearly tell by your pictures that you're using red race stripes as well, which is fail big time.
