A good way to start off, like you mentioned, is with a friend, not a professional model. Take her into your studio, or out in the backyard, a place you like, and just photograph her. Whenever I photograph models, I like it to be outside because I have more lighting opportunities, but i've done studio work too. Get some practice and figure out what you like, play with composition. Make sure she doesn't expect a whole lot of modeling-portfolio images right off the bat.
Also try to think of some poses ahead of time that might be comfortable and suggest some of those, but aside from that just let her be herself. Make her laugh (photograph said smiles, etc accordingly). Give her flowers, and photograph her with those. Do face shots, hand shots, etcetc. and take your time. Look through the camera and photograph/compose what feels right to you.
