/p/:

Where is the best place on the internet for a photography newbie to learn the basics?

/p/, obviously! We're all helpful, kind, and respectful here.

(I actually have no idea. I mostly learned by buying a shit-ton of books on photography from local Library book sales and Half Price Books stores)

/p/ is kinda good to learn some technique or whatever when you can find the threads with good criticism, but to learn the basics, i dunno. i just kinda played around with a camera with full manual controls and googled any terms i didnt know and whatnot. then, after learning all that jazz i just googled for basic technique.

Depends on what exactly you want to learn. There are some general sites like photo.net. Forums are good to ask for help if you know what you're doing. But book references are probably your best bet. I like reading them instead of online sources for no apparent reason.

You can even start from wikipedia to look up general stuff and then use their reference links if you want to get more in depth in certain topics.

The best place to learn, really, is by posting some photos, taking the critiques and using them to make your photography better. Practice really makes perfect. Or, that's how I learned, at least. Reading the manual on your camera is also helpful (what I have been doing, but i've never read any books or taken any classes)
