dear /p/,

how do all of you generally go about getting into your own style of /p/hotography? i need to get started soon, but i feel blocked. i look at other /p/hotographers' work, and i love it and i want mine to be like theirs... only different.

know what i mean?

I dunno. I still don't think I have my own style.

Not sure if that's a bad thing. The other side of the coin is someone so locked into a style that he's spent decades doing nothing but dressing up his weimaraners.

No one has their own style, everyone born after 1972 copies off of someone else. Period.

I was born in 1971. Does that mean I have my own style? Cool.

no. while no one born after 1972 copies off someone else, that does not imply that everyone born before 1971 does not copy off of someone else.

That, and you're too old to be here. Where's a Deep Sleep Operative when you need one?

Copy, copy, copy, copy, and then copy some more.

Eventually your own style will grow out of your influences and background. Until then, at least you're imitating people who have style. This is how it has always worked, more or less. This is the hard part of art that takes time and dedication. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, but there you have it. More or less any university-level art faculty will tell you this.

newfag here - i'm finding my style through a goal and the steps taken to achieve it - I know what I want, ideally. So i take where I want to be, and where i need to go and then attempt to close the distance. As i've been working to achieving the mood, the angles the colors I want i'm finding something unique about my own photography that's becoming clearer. But really, until you start taking pictures that you go "Wow, that's pretty cool" I wouldn't worry too much. it'll come out.
