hey /p/,

thank you a whole lot. due to all your harsh criticism for almost ever photograph poseted, hatred for the D40, rude comments and inexorably high standards, i am now self concious every single time i pick up a camera and take a shot, not just when i am posting on /p/ because im constantly thinking about how you guys would react and if it is too cliche or not.

I don't know if it's because of /p/ or not but I often times don't take a photo because I think it's too cliche

Is this bad?

I'm worried about that, I've felt it at times as well.

Perhaps we should take the shot anyways, because -we- liked it. We can get harsher once we're home, look at the picture, and discard it since it doesnt live up to what we thought when we first took the picture.

How damaging is this for actually doing something creative for a change, however?

A lot of shots and subjects are called cliche because deep down, everyone knows they are interesting and good subjects like flowers and guitars. they have tones of lines, different textures and converging lines.

>>213436

No, they are called cliche because they are cliche.
>> Anonymous
Well, cliche generally means it's overdone. They might be overdone because they make interesting subjects. I think our job would be to try and make the shot different somehow, if we're dealing with a cliche subject.

Thank you for accurately illustrating the OP's point.

Oh fuck off with all the whining. OP is being a little bitch of a baby and so are you. If you can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen. Or better yet, go take some fucking pictures.

That didn't illustrate the OP's point at all.
Cliche images are images that are "overused and betray lack of original thought."
Things don't even become recognized as cliche until well after they stop being original or interesting.

If harsh criticism makes you stop and think before you take a shot, that's good. It shouldn't ultimately make you NOT take the shot, but it should make you think about it before you do it, understand why you're doing it and understand any potential criticism, and then try to frame the image in a way that will best realize what it is you want to do while also responding to the criticism that you think the shot might generate.

OP
If you want to get better do the following... go against the very angle or way you want to photograph a subject... then do it again, and again, and again... each time changing your angle, your focus, your zoom/distance....
Example.. grab a stupid water bottle... put it on a table and make an interesting shot. Not the one every magazine shows you with the 3/4 angle from above look but anything that you deem different.
That is what you need to push for, to get away from everything that is already out there.... to get a photo that can have such minimal values but yet explains everything you are trying to convey. Or the opposite... a lot of chaos with one thing standing out....
Criticism pushes you beyond the cliche... beyond what you already know you can do... beyond the normal colors you see or want to show... from the darkness to the bright whites building a story one pixel at a time.
