Hey /p/
I'm looking at buying a 35mm as a starter camera. What's normal price for a used body?
>> Anonymous
$50-100 depending on how beat or pristine it is

This used 35mm camera will run you from 50 cents to 3 dollars at a garage sale.

On the other hand, this used 35mm camera will run you about $3,000 to $8,000 depending on the condition.

The spotmatic in your post is an EXCELLENT choice for a starter camera. It's like the K1000 that everyone recommends, except it uses slightly older lenses. Because it was made before Pentax started cheapening out, the body is pretty much solid brass (drive over it with a truck), and the lenses have no plastic parts anywhere. It even has a bridge circuit in the meter so you don't need weirdass mercury batteries. I shoot with two and I love them....60 dollar professional-level lenses in an 80 dollar indestructible body.

And then, there's the option of making your own, down to the optics like some fag.

I'm actually not sure of the model of the one I'm looking at. It looks very similar to the one in my OP, but I really have no clue. Pic is the one I'm looking at. Any ideas?

Another noob-ass question: Do old Pentax cameras like these have flash shoes and whatnot? I can't see one. Sorry for being an idiot ¯\_(°_o)_/¯

If it is a Pentax, and says "spotmatic" on it, then it doesn't have a shoe. It has an accessory cold shoe that clips onto the top but it still needs a wired connection to the flash terminals.

If it says Spotmatic II, it will have a flash shoe, but I forget whether it's cold or hot.

The flash sync on those old cameras is pretty slow though eh - like 1/60.

Everybody cheapened out.

If it's a spotmatic II onwards, it will have a fully functioning shoe.

I have a spotmatic II and I love it. Granted, I like a little more information in my viewfinder (aperature and shutter speed), but it still works, and it's about 30 years old.

Not a troll, just serious. Do you know of any camera manufacturer that doesn't use any plastic in their lenses today?

I know there are some all metal Zeiss lenses for Nikon. That are still being made.

I also know that the nikkor D series of lenses are mostly metal. And heavy. Like the 24-70. Even the 15-55 DX lens is a beast.

uh, they're plastic

Well, the guy says it's a Pentax S2 (Different from Spotmatic II?) and that the lenses and everything are in perfect working condition. I wouldn't know what to do though if it didn't have a flash. I'll ask him about it, though.

Nikon's pro lenses are still metal-bodied, as are some of Canon's longer L lenses. I'm sure there's plastic inside, but the body is really what counts.

the new 24-70 2.8 Nikkor is metal

my 17-55mm 2.8 Nikkor is a solid piece of metal

the 18-70 even has a bit of metal...

though the 50mm 1.4 is plastic fantastic. Woohoo

Some of Pentax's new lenses are all metal, and almost worth switching systems for. If they made a body that I liked, I would jump ship.

Those Limited lenses are to die for. Fast and tiny.
