loves it.

i think there's too much contrast.
>> Anonymous
>>120397

OP here, I was thinking that, but then decided I like the contrast in this particular photo.
>> Anonymous
I would prefer a black or gray background.
>> Anonymous
>>120379
Background is distracting. Makes it look like highlights are burned out. I know that they're not, merely saying what it looks like.
>> Anonymous
creative, interesting, well executed... you're not from /p/!

Thanks!

Any other comments? You really dont get much attention on here unless your thread includes "OMG NEW CAMERA PICS OF MY DOG"

My wife was reading over my shoulder yesterday and agreed with the person that said there was too much contrast (I personally just lurk in /p/ since I can't really contribute much never having taken and photography courses or anything)

I don't think 90% of /p/ has taken any sort of courses / classes.
I haven't personally, just shot trial and error for about 3 years
So feel free to lurk less, just don't expect us to like your pics :)
>> Anonymous
I personally like the contrast.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
boring photo is boring

composition is messy also, rule of thirds could come in handy with this kind of subject
also, did you shoot with a tripod? because it looks kinda.. blurry or not detailed enough.

so yea, if you are obsessed with this mirror'y ninja star thing then reshoot and try to improve the composition.
honestly though, shoot a different subject. this is oh so boring

Example of noob that doesnt realize how lines\shapes can make an interesting photograph.
>> Anonymous
>>120870

Same anon as above, I dont see how the photo is blurry at all

Oh hi OP

I don't see how random shitty lines or shitty shapes make a photo interesting, but okay :D
>> Anonymous
>>120877
Oh piss off, beethy. You're not hot shit just because some half-recognizable photographer thinks you're worth having as a side-kick. My vote goes toward the image being cool, the subject being just fine, and agreeing about the rule of thirds to some degree.

Not op :)

hahaha

How is the composition here messy? It's one object, on a stark white background. And the only blur I see is from the DoF being narrow, which gives it a three-dimensional feel.

I think the subject's interesting, too.
>> Jal
I like it... when I used to take bw I like high contrast alot. Now when I take color I like to play more with the colors. I but the image reminds me of the old days.
>> Anonymous
OP here. Thanks for the comments :) I'm just going to ignore beethys as it obviously makes no sense.

Don't ignore Beethy's comments. I disagree with him in this particular case, but he's not a troll.

RULES WERE MADE TO BE BROKEN

die hard adherence to the rule of thirds is a big mistake. It works in 95% of all cases, but in the other 5% something else works better. People like winogrand didn't give a shit about set in stone rules regarding composition, and just shot what looked good to their eye.

If you look at nearly all of the greats, they weren't nearly as pretentious as you. Maybe they had something that you don't?
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe

This is true. I find rules more useful when analyzing shots afterwards, but it should all be internalized as much as possible so that the shooting process can be kept fluid. These rules are descriptive, not proscriptive.
>> Anonymous
>>121148
Wrong. There are some rules he gave a fuck about, like including a horizontal anchor for composition and looking through the viewfinder.

And the Winogrand card doesn't always apply for shitty and sloppy compositions.
>> Anonymous
>>121163

He did that b/c it made the shot look good, not b/c he read in some book that having horizontal/vertical anchors is good.
>> Anonymous
>>121164
No, because random tilting = shit composition. Shit composition = fail. He learned composition from his days as an art student.
>> Anonymous
>>121166

All that I'm saying is that when he took the shot, he wasn't thinking "ok, subject on the upper right-hand third, check--horizontal anchor, check--balanced photo, check...etc. He knew about the rules of composition, but didn't consciously apply them to the image. Maybe just a quick adjustment from the time he looked in the viewfinder to when he took the picture. The rules of composition exist b/c, generally, they make art more aesthetically pleasing. I'm not saying he didn't follow them, but that he didn't go about taking pictures in a cookbook, list of recipes fashion.

do liek... maybe, just maybe you can try to experiment with duotone... it would add to the outworldly feeling.

OP here, wus dat?
>> Anonymous
>>120792

I know I sure as hell haven't taken any courses except one photojournalism course taught by a pretentious hack who didn't show me anything I didn't find out through 7 years of experimenting and OJT.

On the pic: I definitely like it and don't find it boring.

I would've dropped the ISO and see how long of an exposure I could've gotten out of it.
