Tokina AT-X 28-70 2.8
I have the oppertunity to get this lens for $120 and I was wondering if it's a decent buy. I've read a couple of reviews and some people say that it's too soft unless you stop it down to f8. Others say it's fine. Just wondering on /p/ opinion.

BTW it will be going on a D200 body.

120's not too bad for that. I'd probably do it.

Its alright, I've owned 3 versions of this lens. None were fantastic, I ended up getting a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 in the end (And then selling that too)
But the Tamron was lighter, sharper and focused faster (and I bought it used for $250)

OP here. It has to be better than the 18-55 kit lens though right?

Yes, but 28mm on the wide end is kind of awkward on the D200.

Get the Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 It sells for $220 on Amazon.com sometimes (New)
Much better quality and 24mm is a bit wider.

Otherwise if you replace your 18-55 pick up the Tamron 17-50 f2.8

Or wait till the 16-85 VR comes out and spend the $400 or so on that.

Awkward how? You mean FOV? I'll mostly be using this at something other than 28. Probably more towards the other end (60-70mm).
