Hello /p/

I've been doing darkroom photography for years (my weapon of choice is pictured), and I want to move into the realm of digital. Taking well composed pictures isn't my problem at this point; photoshop, however, is.

Problem is, whenever I ask for help in learning the basics of photo editing, I never seem to get responses more detailed than "JUST PLAY AROUND IN PHOTOSHOP LOL" or "LAWL UNSHARPEN MASK".

I'm mostly interested in nature / scenery / wildlife photography, so if anyone could point me to a detailed guide on how to properly apply filters and aftereffects to those subfields of photography, I would be most thankful.

Levels are important: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/levels.htm

Also, I'm an MX user as well. It's lovely.

I honestly don't use Photoshop any more for photo editing. Lightroom has taken that crown along with the queen. I'm not big into PS filters and effects and Lightroom makes all those little changes so fast and easy that going through CS3 is just a pain.

tl;dr get lightroom

curves make everything look better.

Just remember, levels for color, curves for lighting. I hate it when people use levels to brighten a photo.

And yeah, seriously OP, you need to just google something on it. There are hundreds of tuts out there and they're not exactly easy to do on an image board.

OP here, thanks everyone, I'll take a look at all of this.

The frequency of tuts is exactly the problem; I've had too many experiences with terrible instructions to want to weed through google. I'd much rather ask competent photographers to point me to a high quality tutorial :D

Go Pentax users!!

For me, Adobe Camera Raw (almost the same thing as Lightroom) provides all the necessary features for basic photo editing. I personally consider any work done in the "meat" of Photoshop (filters and the like) to be "shooping" and go so far as to store them in a separate folder on my computer.

tl;dr I second Lightroom

Word of advice: pick up a K10D while they're still in stock.

If you have any Pentax lenses at all, the K10D would be a great way to go digital with them and you wouldn't have to worry about scanning your film.

I do have a good variety of Pentax lenses; are there any drawbacks to using older lenses on a DSLR versus lenses specifically made for digital?

The older lenses have to be used with stop-down metering, on a 'custom' function. It's no real hassle: just download a copy of the manual. It makes sense, really.

Nope. Well, you'll lose AF and have to meter stopped down, but that's not really a big deal if you're already willing to manually focus (which you probably are, given your last camera)
