AFAIK, it's like shooting the lunar eclipse, you gotta have a pretty decent telephoto lens. (Also, because I got no sleep last night I forgot the name of this thing) But you gotta either hold the camera supra still or a external remote shutter button.

the radiant point is going to be in leo. if you don't know which constellation leo is, find out, then point your camera towards it. then just leave your shutter open for 20 minutes, preferably in a dark location, and bingo bango. you got it.

Can you do open shutter shots with a CCD?
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>295728

oh, and wide ange works best, since you have no way of telling where a meteor will appear (other than around the radiant). plus bright meteors will often leave a streak measuring 120 degrees.

NORIGHT

Also, the longest exposure you can get of the moon before its motion becomes apparent is 30 seconds.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
are you shooting through a telescope? what kind of ccd do you mean?

Tripod for starters, enable mirror lockup, remote release (wired or IR, either works). You'd be surprised by how easy it is to produce camera shake on a long exposure and how well it can ruin your pictures. You will want to shoot RAW... and... there's this weird result I've gotten doing long exposures with high iso vs low iso, specially with quickly-moving objects...

You might want to push the iso to 400 instead of going for longer iso 100 exposures, to make sure that any sudden flashes get captured well.

Another thing you can try is, if you have a laptop, plug your camera (on the tripod) to your computer, and program EOS Utility to automatically fire one frame after another over n amount of time. That way you won't have to sit there like a retard waiting for each exposure, nor will you risk moving the tripod.

Just the emlement in any semi-pro digital camera.

I'm asking because I'm researching which rig to buy. This might make or break my decision to stay in the mid range.

I've tried 3 times now to get meteor shots (will be trying again tonight)

SO i have a few tips that may help you.

1. Meteors are faint as fuck. Wide aperture lenses and high ISO's are pretty much needed. I usually shoot around F2, 8 seconds at 50mm (75 @ 1.5x crop)
up to 15 seconds at f2, 30mm (45 @ 1.5x crop)
ISO 640-1250.

This prevents star trails and is bright enough to catch the average meteor, Faint ones still won't show up though.

Take 2 camera's and shoot wide star trail shots at the same time, shoot in 30+ minute intervals on the second camera, This won't capture any meteors unless they are ridiculously bright.

Longer exposures DON'T help, Meteors don't need to Burn in, they are over in milliseconds so the length of the exposure can actually be a detriment when the ambient light burns in and burns over your meteor.
Aperture and ISO need to be maximized to show meteors, therefore a programmable remote (or camera) is ideal to keep the camera plugging away.

Plan to stack failed shots. Deep sky tracker can stack star shots even without a tracking mount (just ensure there are no star trails) High ISO's don't matter as much for this, so you can essentially push the limit on your camera.

The meteors Originate from Leo, however that means the closer they are in the sky to leo, the shorter they will burn up (The ones just skimming the atmosphere burn the longest) Therefore shooting at around 60 degrees from leo works the best, just choose the darkest part of the sky to shoot at. you will end up with more contrast in the stars / meteors.

Thanks everyone, if I manage to get any shots I'll post them here tonight.

>>295750
How many exposures do you take in order to get a good, stacked result?
>> Anonymous
higher the iso, more you shoulld stack. for ISO 800+20 at least
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
I just got back from shooting them, The moon rises in about an hour so I got all my shots in before it started fucking up my shots.
Didn't see many meteors this year, maybe 30 in the 2 hours I was out there.
Not sure if I got any pictures of em, I will see when I check.
Otherwise I did some milky way shots to stack. So i'll run through those eventually

I'm disappointed, it was cloudy the last couple days here. I wanted to try and get some shots. Hopefully you all got some decent exposures..

I'm in a tossup between a new lens and a telescope after x-mas.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>295948
if you plan on using the telescope to take pics, make sure it has a decent to good equitorial mount
From what I hear the EQ3 is the absolute minimum quality mount to get use-able shots
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
Lol I got one meteor out of about 300 pics.

Well its bigger and brighter than the shots I got from the Perseid meteor shower. Still not fantastic or anything

Best shot so far, its taking a lot longer than I thought to stack these. Haven't got around to the meteor shot yet.

34 frames, no darks, no bias's no flats
D300, 12" @ f2, ISO 1250
sigma 30mm f1.4
cropped about 20% of the picture because of the lack of flat frames to correct for the vignetting.

Another one
30 shots, no darks, bias's or flat's

Holy shit these are awesome. I've always wanted to try Astrophotography. Are you using any tracking here?
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>296135
oh wait thats the 30mm, lol
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>296138
No, hence why the shorter exposures.
Deep sky stacker does the calibration so you can just take a bunch of shots with no star trails and it will align them for you.

On a clear night, (No moon, seriously I wasted the first 2 tries trying with the moon) They work quite well, ISO 1250 on the D300 is obviously not even pushing it (since my lack of dark's actually came out decent)

Last one, The satellite in the bottom will give you an idea of what the stacking program does.

It blurs the trees because it tracks the stars, not that I really minded.

This was shot with the Sigma 50mm f1.4, only 20 pictures stacked, no darks again.

I assume you shoot RAW for stacking...

Nice shots, i'll have to give it a go myself.

These look great! The last time I did stacking it was with a web cam years ago.

What program are you using for stacking?

There's a mountain nearby (sort of) that every time I got I see dozens of small meteorites :3 Never thought about stacking for meteorites tho :/

RAW, take out any noise reduction, Increase exposure by 1 stop
Export TIFF's, convert from those. Some of these I forgot to export TIFF's so they are Jpeg stacks

>>296160
Dark frame is a shot taken at the same exposure with the lenscap on, aka. (Lossless compression is needed)
Bias is a same ISO shot taken at maximum shutter speed (1/4000 1/8000 whatever) (Lossless compression is also needed)
Flat is a shot taken to measure vignetting to correct for light falloff in the corners, (white wall shot at +2 EV or so)

Nice. You live somewhere with no light pollution eh?
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL

Theres a little bit at this location, however this is less than 20 minutes from my house so I often just go here and avoid the horizon where the city is.
Though I know a good place I can go where there is essentially none, its also at about 5100 feet above sea level (according to google maps)
Its about an hour and a half from where I live though, So I've only been there for the Perseid meteor shower that happened this summer.
