So /p/

do you carry your SLR or a camera on you all the time? What lense etc? I generally dont carry it with me to uni and things but I probably should since ive got a tiny bag just for it and the 50mm (which is my smallest lense anyway)
>> eku !8cibvLQ11s
All the time, everywhere. 50mm, 17-85mm, 70-300mm, 30D, flash. Except now that I'm in the school, I usually left the 70-300 home.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
I pretty much go everywhere with my Rebel XTi, 18-55, 50mm, 35mm, and 80-200mm. Usually there's another camera crammed in my bag, too (e.g., right now, I've got my film Rebel in there as well).
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
when taking my camera everywhere with me, its either D70 with 18-70mm or F5 with 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.8

D200, 50mm 1.2, 24mm 2.8 & SB600 for event shooting, easily I add a vivitar 28-90 2.8-3.5.

one or two RFs go with me anytime I leave the house (olympus XA & RC)

SLRs are huge. This means they have huge guts! RIP AND TEAR!...uh, I digress. Anyway, SLRs are big, expensive and can't be taken out of the pocket in a second. So I take my crappy wallet-sized minolta when I feel lazy.
>> eku !8cibvLQ11s

But the time taking it out of the bag is compensated by the fact that I have already taken the photo while your camera is still powering up.
>> des
Yeah, I almost always carry my fujica+50 and a 2x tele. It's got an eveready case's bottom screwed on, but I don't use the case. The camera just leaks light really bad and I'm too lazy to change the door seals.

My camera is within easy reach in my car at all times, so I have easy access. After missing one fantastic shot, i've never made that mistake again. Carry the full arsenal, minus my 200-500 so a wide angle, 28-80/macro and my 35-135 (all purpose lens) also 1 or two spare polarizing filters.
>> Anonymous
fe2 with a 55 micro and polarizer, everywhere i go. usually wrapped up in a t-shirt in the back seat of my car, or slung over my shoulder when i want to pretend i'm some 1970's photojournalist.

canon a80, most of the time.

I shoot events for a lot of clubs I'm in so i always have my xt and 17-55IS pretty much attached to my hand when i go to those things but otherwise i don't carry it with me.

to you guys that do carry your primary camera with you all the time, are you guys photo majors out of curiosity or is this just a hobby for you guys? And do you guys run around with an extra camera bag for your equip or do you just stuff your cam into whatever bag your possibly already carrying (ie bookbag)?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Just a hobby. I'm actually a computer programmer in real life (hence my near encyclopedic knowledge of the techie side of cameras and photography combined with the aesthetic sense of a retarded ape).

I used to carry my laptop bag with me wherever I went, but I almost never actually used my laptop when I got there. My camera bag is actually a bit lighter, and a lot more likely to be useful to me. And there's enough spare pockets that I can stick my iPod and Nokia 770 tablet in there, too.
>> elf_man !fBgo7jDjms
I keep my camera with me most of the time. I haven't learned my lesson yet. So that's d40 plus 18-55, 55-200 VR, lens hood, mini tripod and a couple other bits that don't really take up space.

>>79121
Just a hobby. If you're bringing anything more than just the camera with the lens that's on it, you may as well bring your camera bag. When I went on vacation in the UK I borrowed a camera bag that was just large enough to double as a daypack, and that worked wonderfully, I had space for all my gear plus a water bottle or jacket, and various small odds and ends I wanted with me.

I have in some terms a huge bag, though I think it's just medium.
And there my stuff just is inside with my other junk. Propably not the best condition for my gear, but I don't know any better way to carry everything withouth having two bags.

I carry my laptop around with me all the time and I want to carry my camera around too but I wanna figure out a way to carry both without using too bags or getting either beat up by just throwing them in a normal bag, and honestly I'm not sure how much its worth to me to buy a bag made for both.

but as a side note all you photo hobbyists that carry your slr with you all the time make me feel better about wanted to have mine on me 24/7. I get a lot of weird looks from people when they find out I'm not a photo major, not that it bothers me that much but its nice to know there are other ppl so dedicated to the craft that aren't specifically trying to go pro ^_^

I'm purely hobby. You just never know when the perfect shot will pop up and you'll regret it later. more like a primefag. Otherwise he'd get a normal zoom lens that would probably be more convenient to carry around. I'd still keep the 50mm f/1.4 as it's very useful. But maybe he doesn't really mind the weight and risk of bringing all that gear with him.

I just bring my 50mm and 28mm prime with me.

I'm most curious about the 105/2.5 when you have an 80-200/2.8. Does that extra third of a stop between 2.5 and 2.8 really make enough of a difference to justify carrying around a whole extra lens?
>> Anonymous
>>79200
Different lenses, different properties, I would think.

He might really like the bokeh and look of the 105, but also carries the 80-200 for when he needs the extra length.

>>79196
Nothing wrong with being a primefag. If I had the money for it all, I'd have (for a 1.5x crop sensor) a 24, 28, 50, 60, 70, and a 90, plus a zoom to take me past that, and an ultrawide. Maybe a zoom, maybe a prime.

I'd only carry three tops, though. Probably most commonly the 24, 28, and 60, or the 28, 50, and 60.

Perchance to dream.
>> Anonymous
>>79203
yeah but the 80-200 f/2.8 is huge. also its already a very nice lens. for me, 1/3 stop wouldnt be justification unless the awesome was more saturated on the 105mm f/2.5

Post club pics!

Also If I go digital, I take my D70 (IR modded) D200 - 80-200 f2.8 and 24mm f1.8 + 50mm f1.4 + SB-600

IF I go film its usually just an N80 (with a roll or 2 of Velvia 50), 50mm f1.4, and 24mm f1.8, Sometimes my 90mm f2.8 macro.

I don't know why I choose one over the other, But the film bag is tiny and easily fits in my backpack I take to the University.

The Digital bag IS a backpack, so not really a school tripbag.

I usually just carry the D70s with the 50mm 1.4D on it. It's light and usually gets what i need to capture when i'm walking around... which is usually people. So i try my stab at photojournalism.

a good camera bag with dedicated compartments is a terrific purchase. it's dangerous to have your camera rattling around in your backpack, even if it's wrapped in a towel.

lowepro makes great bags, tamrac makes great bags, crumpler makes camera bags that don't look like camera bags (in case you don't want to look like a theft target), but they're expensive.

you can always get a diaper bag, too. all those pockets designed for bottles hold a lens perfectly, plus no one is ever going to steal a diaper bag.
>> elf_man !fBgo7jDjms
>>79366
I've been looking for something along those lines. Unfortunately eagle creek no longer makes the bag I brought on vacation, but the regular domke seems like it would work, just buy one larger than you need.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>79378

YEAH!! it;s the Nikkor. I absolutely love the 17-55mm 2.8.

It's got slight distortions at the wide end, but honestly, not enough for me to notice at all, and at the telephoto end use it as a portrait lens thanks to the f/2.8.

It's heavy, built like a tank and takes really great images with awesome contrast.

But i don't like the way it protrudes, like at the telephoto end the lense in order to focus actually extends about an inch and a half from the lens body.

And honestly, it's as expensive as hell haha. I bought it from the states when i was in NYC and i saved a lot, since Australian prices would have cost me 50% more... yep...

If you friend can afford it i would definitely recommend it. But if not, the Tamron 17-50mm is the way to go. It's much cheaper, image quality is almost as good... but i just didn't like the build quality and honestly i just prefer nikkors.

I also have won a few competitions here and there and do the odd headshots for all my actor/actresses/model friends.

So the lens itself has already won money back for me :D

also, a regular backpack with foam attracts less thieves.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
I have a white and pink small animal purse type bag for my camera, just fits the body + 50mm, although with some creativity i could fit one of my larger lenses (11-18 is massive). Doesnt look like a camera bag and looks great on me (fashion whore) so i dont have to worry about getting mugged when im out shooting clubs. Also has spaces for buisness cards <3
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>79533

Yeah i thought about that too, my denim G-Star bag does the job really well... though when i carry my tripod on the side of it... it kinda gives it away what kind of bag i have.

Serisouly though, i just pack alot of foam at the bottom of the bag and line it up on the sides and in between lenses and cameras etc. It's not hat much of a hassel, and saves me alot of problems especially security when i'm in Rome and gypsies are everywhere.
