Why is the Nikon D1 so cheap?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
Cause it's old and digital.
>> Doitle
I really want a Digital SLR though and can't afford spending like 500$ for a body :/ This looks like a possible option.

It shouldn't come as a surprise. It's several generations old now, and even the D2x dropped $2000 on the used market overnight when the D3 was released.

Not that the MF glass would be too usable with the D40's shitty viewfinder.

But hey, if they get five million soccer moms to buy an all-automatic D40 or EOS 400D with the cheap kit lens, they'll take that over one million photographers buying a good camera and used lenses from when they actually gave a damn about build quality, ergonomics, etc.

The Pentax K100D has a high quality build, viewfinder, and a good ergonomic layout compared to the other entry level models. If it wasn't for the fact that the AF blew dick indoors and the buffer can only take 3 raw shots, I would really recommend it to about anyone looking for a sub $400 DSLR.

As far as the D1 goes, you're going to want to hit up a D1X/H or a D2H first off, those are really good deals for their price. If I wasn't doing low light stage work I would definitely look into it.

not to mention that as it was a professional body in its time, it will have been used professionally and this would mean a huge amount of shutter actuations which will of course wear it out faster and create many other problems.

be very wary of this, its probably why it and other ex-pro bodies are so cheap

It's probably the best of currently produced ones- the *istD had a great viewfinder and two command dials- but it only has one command dial. Which is stupid.

Maybe but probably not. Most of those cameras are used by rich amateurs, not professionals. The ones that are used professionally are usually pretty easy to spot because they will be banged up, scratched, missing LCD covers and the like, written on, engraved, and generally look heavily used.

Most pros don't get rid of their cameras just because a new one came out, they use them until they fall apart then throw them away and buy another one. When I was working as a photojournalist we were still using a few F4s bodies even when we were starting to transition to digital just because they still worked.

The reason former top of the line bodies are so cheap is because the people who buy them (rich amateurs) are the very worst of gear snobs and they can afford to ditch whatever they have the second something new is released. The market gets flooded with used high end cameras and nobody rich wants them, so it's only natural that the prices take a nose dive. Since the sellers have pockets full of money already, they don't care if they get anything for their old camera so they just unload them for whatever anyone will pay.

Get a fucking D200 if you're cheap.

D1: $250
D200: $900

Gee, yeah, that's a bargain compared to the D1.
