OK well i just turned off my Olympus E-510 and it emitted an awful vibraty kind of noise, kind of like if you put the plastic end of an electric tooth brush on the counter or something? and with it i can actually feel something vibrating.

Is this bad?

i have no idea what it is, my only thought as of right now is take it to a camera shop and see if they can look at it for me and then if i need to i can contact Olympus i guess.

any suggestions as to what this may be would be VERY much so appreciated

Squeeze some toothpaste into it and then put your dick into the lens mount. Minty fresh.

The E510 has a sensor-shake dust removal system. My guess is that something's screwed up with that.

thats kind of what im thinking.

if i do have to send it in will the warranty cover it completely because ive only had it since a week or two after Christmas

A lot of E-510 owners reported shaking when turning the camera off (this is the IS system resetting itself and is normal according to Olympus), but I don't remember anyone mentioning the noise.

It's most likely sensor shake, but it's related to IS, not dust removal.
Only Sony and Pentax use sensor shake to remove dust (doesn't work btw). Olympus shakes a kind of a thin film filter in front of the sensor, which is very light and is supposed to vibrate at an ultrasonic frequency. Plus this shit activates only at startup, not when turning camera off.

ah yes i forgot

so IS could be fucking with something maybe?

Most likely... As it's been said already, the shaking itself is normal (btw, it won't shake if you turn IS off), but it should be nearly silent. I think it's a good idea to ask the tech support about it before the IS unit gets fucked.

well i just took out my camera because after reading>>155289i remembered i had IS on when i last used it. so i turned it off and PRESTo no more awful sounding noise.

this raises another question for me though is turning the camera off with IS on bad in any way? It doesnt seem like it should be bad but the noise scares me every time. i guess il just go back to hardly ever using it if it is bad.

thanks for the help!

It shouldn't be bad. It shouldn't be noisy either, so likely there's something wrong with the camera. Go ask tech support, maybe send them a recording of the noise.

For now, until you get an answer from them, just turn IS off every time before turning the camera off.

sounds like a good ideal. i think il go see a camera store today if i can then try contacting technical support.
