This camera looks awesome. I have a Canon 5D, but I've been looking to get a small-ish camera like the Canon G9 or Sigma DP-1. This new Panasonic looks great.
>> mom
I really like this one too.....but the accesories gonna be $$$$$$$

what a waste.

This looks neat, but I can't find very much info on it.

That's because the LX3 hasn't been released yet. Check out the DPReview.com forums.

$800 sounds pretty reasonable if it's a decent camera.

The LX3 will retail for $499, not $800. Plus, I've been enjoying my $3000 Canon 5D for the last few years, thanks.

Nice lens specs, but the sensor is disappointingly small considering how much it's hyped in the press release.

>>227432
Of course it's small, it's a small-sensor format camera. Criticizing it for the size of the sensor is like criticizing a camera that takes 135 film for taking 135 film. It offers advantages and disadvantages to larger formats in both cases, and I know you know those lens specs (24-70/2 equivalent) would not be able to be realized at anywhere near that size on a camera of equivalent size.

I personally wouldn't mind something larger, in the mold of their DMC-L1 (which had a 28-90/2 equivalent lens), but for some reason some people have a thing against just throwing a camera body over their shoulder and insist on it fitting in their pocket if it's not an SLR.

I do think it could be served with a slightly larger sensor, say 2/3" like the DMC-L1, but a significantly larger one would negate the benefits (smaller lenses, significantly more DoF) of the smaller formats. Although it would be nice if there were more non-SLRs in larger formats.

Big thing, though: Give it interchangeable lenses; my ideal selection would be something like an equivalent 24 Summicron, a wide-normal Summilux, and then a ~75mm and ~90mm Summicron or Elmarit.

Also an EVF that sticks in the shoe, like on some of Ricoh's cameras, for TTL work.

relevant to my interest as i've been holding out to buy a lx 2

R-D1 is where it's at. Mmmmmmmm
>> Anonymous

While the RD-1 is a good camera, it's not the same type as this. One is a focal plane shuttered rangefinder/viewfinder, the other is a leaf shuttered camera with an LCD for focusing and precise composition, and shoe finders for general use. (Panasonic is just making a 24mm equiv. finder, but there's no reason why one couldn't get a 28/35/40/50mm shoe finder and set it to the equivalent step on the zoom. I don't know of any 60mm shoe finders. Serenar?)

DURRRRR lookit mee, I can tell you all about leaf shutters and rangefinders.

You have no useful knowledge to contribute. You pointed out that this camera is not a rangefinder with a focal-plane shutter (NO SHIT) and then you said some banal shit about the viewfinders on the panasonic.

The R-D1 is a good smallish camera with a (older) professional-level sensor that takes L and M mount lenses. It would be highly relevant as a second carry-around camera for someone who shoots with a 5D.

Well, not all of them. I know a guy who has one and shoots on green square all the time. But he's a tool.

Just buy an LX2.

It's almost exactly the same camera, but without the retarded accessories you'll never use. It also doesn't cost $800.

I have a D-LUX 3 (Leica copy of LX2), and my sister has an LX2. They're great cameras. You don't need to buy an LX3 unless you're bleeding money.

A CHALLENGER APPEARS

Unfortunately this camera is massive fail because it defeats the purpose of a small, pocketable camera by having an XBOX HUEG lens permanently attached. Unless you happen to have large L-shaped pockets anyway...

All valid points but you should really read the press release. It's all "GUYS WE GOT THE BIGGEST SENSOR FUCK THE MEGAPIXEL RACE", which is exactly what we've been waiting for except for the fact it's a lie. Also I think you're referring to the DMC-LC1/Leica Digilux 2. L1 is a 4/3rds SLR.

>>227466
This is why I have one and you don't woop woop. Though this is still interesting because the LX series is quite pocketable, unlike the RD-1.

>>227472
Perhaps a 60 finder exists for the Konica Hexanon 60/1.2, but buying one to put the finder on your LX3 would be like turning a Noctilux into a bong.

>>227611
If I had a 5D (almost got one over my RD-1), my second carryaround body would be a 350D. Most of the time I still need a bag with my RD-1, unless I'm taking pictures close to home, negating the smallness factor. So I'd rather have a backup that shares lenses with my main body.

The RD-1 is an excellent second body for existing Leica shooters, of course. And a great first digital camera too :D

It's an exaggeration, definitely. But nothing out of the ordinary for a camera press release ("with new Feature X you can take pics just like THE PROS!") and it is an improvement over standard practice, in that they didn't up it for the hell of it. Would've been great if they dropped it down to six.

>Also I think you're referring to the DMC-LC1/Leica Digilux 2. L1 is a 4/3rds SLR.

Whoops, yeah.

If you have ten thousand Euros for a final production run Noctilux (yes seriously), you get a humidor to keep your bong in as well as a book about its history.
