FACT: GRAFFITI IS NOT THE ORIGINAL WORD FOR WHAT WE DO!
It is called "WRITING" and we are called "WRITERS".
We focus on the art of LETTERING

What do you write?

When you "letter" on another person's property without permission, it's called graffiti. If you do it on the side of your own building, your own billboard, your own fence, that's fine, but to do that on someone else's property is disrespectful.

>FACT: I AM A HUGE PRETENTIOUS TOOL WHO CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY SOMEONE WOULDN'T WANT MY NAME ILLEGIBLY SPRAYPAINTED ON THEIR WALL.
Fix'd.

Like calligraphy? That's cool. What about "graffiti" that doesn't involve characters? Should that be called "drawings" and "artists"?
>> Anonymous
>>58399
I don't know why you think that the word "graffiti" has an negative connotation, it doesn't, at least it shouldn't. It's a good word. I suggest you to read about the origins of it, about ancient Rome.

QFT

give it 5 years for you to grow up and you might realize how foolish you look going "we are called WRITERS"
>> Anonymous
>>58446
What do the origins matter? It's about what it means now. A lot of words meant very different ages ago. Most graffiti is illegal. Illegal makes it negative. Get over yourself.
>> Anonymous
>>58449
> Illegal makes it negative.
No, it does not. Through history we can see how silly the laws have been. I'm genuinely sorry for you, if you believe that your current government is much better.
>> Anonymous
>>58449
> What do the origins matter?
In this case they do. You see, the OP obviously doesn't want to call his art "graffiti", so he's trying to give it a new name. But he should. Instead he should popularize the original meaning and stand proud.

>>58449
Most "Writing" is illegal as well. What's your point?
>> Anonymous
We need some more /b/ graffiti, Ive been thinking about doin sum myself.
>> Anonymous
>>58456
I agree there, OP should just call it what it's called and be proud of it. I still don't see what origins have to do with that.

>>58457
Even so, writing does not seem to have a negative approach to it, aight?

rules, 1/2, etc

"Writing" doesn't have such a negative connotation simply because nobody knows wtf you're talking about when you're referring to graffiti. Once society adopts "Writing" as the OP so wishes, the word will be cast down to the status of graffiti.

Hemingway was a writer. Kerouac was a writer. Proust was a writer. Dostoevsky was a writer. Fitzgerald was a writer. Orwell was a writer. Shakespeare was a writer. Marquez was a writer. Kazantzakis was a writer. Hugo was a writer. Allende was a writer. Achebe is a writer. Camus was a writer. Hesse was a writer. Goethe was a writer. Singer was a writer. Miller was a writer. Celine was a writer.

You are a calligrapher, albeit not in a traditional style. There's nothing wrong with that, so long as you don't mess up someone else's building. But you are not a writer.

The following have been fixed:

Hemingway was a blistering drunk who lived with polydactyl cats in Key West eating pie. He is also he man I want to be when I grow up.
Kerouac was an drama-loving acid freak who would have adored myspace had he lived to see it.
Proust was a glutton for punishment.
Dostoevsky was a bitter Russian who wanted everyone else to be bitter about having to read his bitter tales about bitter Russians.
Fitzgerald was a jerk who managed to prove that the Great Depression took down narrative threads as well as the stock market.
Orwell was the original incarnation of Michael Moore.
Shakespeare was Francis Bacon.
Marquez was a gimp.
Kazantzakis was a Dostoevsky wanna-be.
Hugo was a nerd, and would have been burned at the stake had he been only marginally more famous. After all, the French do this to everyone they love.
Allende was a wishing she would get cornholed by Guevara until El Che got shot in the bean and turned into a t-shirt.
Achebe is a whiner.
Camus was proof that potheads exist throughout history and are not an invention of the 20th century.
Hesse was an intellectual who sponged off of his parents while writing his quackery.
Goethe was a salvation-obsessed Catholic.
Singer was an annoying screechy bitch that wound up being used as a plot device in Fight Club.
Miller was a time. It is now white-trash entertainment.
Celine was a writer. Celine now does a Vegas show since the Titanic II soundtrack didn't pan out.

I only have a time to refute a few of these; some of them are true, like Hemingway, but most of them aren't.

>Kerouac was an drama-loving acid freak who would have adored myspace had he lived to see it.
Kerouac tried hallucinogens and didn't like them. His drug of choice was alcohol; this led to his liver exploding.

I also don't think Kerouac was "drama-loving."

>Orwell was the original incarnation of Michael Moore.
No, Orwell wasn't a party idealogue who couldn't live by his own principles. When Michael Moore goes a few days without food anywhere, let alone the slums of Paris, then we can talk.

>Shakespeare was Francis Bacon.
No. The whole basis of the "Shakespeare was Bacon" theory is the elitist assumption that only a nobleman could've written his plays.

>Camus was proof that potheads exist throughout history and are not an invention of the 20th century.
Camus lived in the 20th century. Also, I don't see anything potheaded about anything Camus wrote; I honestly don't know where you're getting this from, and I can at least see that on most of these.

>Singer was an annoying screechy bitch that wound up being used as a plot device in Fight Club
I haven't read Fight Club. We are talking about the same Issac Bashevis, right?

Literate people, on /p/? Amusing.

Anyway, graffiti is to writing in the same way "The Sexy Bitch's Book of Doing It, Getting It, and Giving It" is to highbrow literature.
