niggers, i'm thinking of buying a digital cam
i'm no photo major, but i've always admired the field and would like to dabble in it more.
i'm a graphic design major and often use images in my work, but i'd like to start taking my own shots instead of relying on stock photos all the time.
i understand most photo basics like shutter speed, f-stops, iso settings, etc.
any recommendations on what type of cam i should look into or what to look for?
pic related as it's one i'm currently interested in.
more info about it here:

no one?

Your links is dead and none of us recognize the camera because the only decent camera Sony makes is its DSLR.

The link works fine. It's just so long that you can't paste it into the URL bar in one go. Paste each line in separately and it works perfectly.

Anyway, I have no problem with the Sony cameras. Yes, they are not pro quality, but then again you're not a pro either, so who cares about that.

Though, my suggestion is to get an older camera with fewer megapixels but with a better lens. A good lens is much more important to the quality of your photos than having the highest pixel count.

Perhaps a basic DSLR that also has an autofocus mode? You can probably get one for about the same price as that Sony. That way you've got much more flexiblity, and if you decide you get more serious about it you can start getting into different lenses to suit your needs--and you'll have the option of using the all-important manual mode.

I know, and I did paste both lines in. Got an error page.

Did you make sure there was no space between the "&" at the end of the first line and the "a" at the beginning of the second line?

It works just fine for me too.

in case you can't get the URL to work, it's a Sony model DSC-H3/B

OP here
thanks for your suggestions
i would love to get a SLR, but it's not in my budget. The DSLR models i found online range from $700 and up, unless i'm not looking in the right place.
I'm also open to other brands, not just Sony.
Thanks.

Pentax K100D and Nikon D40 can both be had under $700.

Look for an older model DSLR. You can get a good used one in your price range.

As was said earlier, you don't need 8+ Megapixels. Drop your megapixel rating and you can buy a good used DSLR. Even the basic kit lenses that come with the DSLR will be better than that on a point & shoot camera.

Iam in a similar boat as you (graphic design major who doesnt want to be a slave to stock photos) and I got my camera off craigslist (Canon Rebel XT).
The strengths of a dslr is shooting raw (which helps if you are shooting with a average lens) and the ability to change the lens, which makes lens selection really important when shopping for one.
Not to sound like a canonfag here, but i would recommend going canon due to the huge lens selection available. You can also get some killer lens (canon ef 50mm f1.8 aka "Nifty Fifty") for less than 90 bucks new.

Canon Rebel XT (not XTi) also goes for around $500. Even cheaper used.

You forgot the ability to shoot at high ISO, which is the biggest advantage of an SLR. I pretty much always keep my Digital Rebel at ISO400 and never notice any noise.

Also: Much easier to have a shallow DoF with an SLR, thanks to the larger sensor

OP here. Thanks for all the suggestions.

what's the difference between the XT and XTi?
also when should i be suspicious of pricing?
i think i found a site that sells the XTi for under $300. i don't know if i should trust it though.
anyone care to recommend trustworthy retailers, etc?

Yeah, don't trust that. Almost certainly a scam.

bhphotovideo, adorama, keh, amazon, newegg, all good.

The main differences between the XT and the XTi are:
* XTi has 9 vs. 7 autofocus points
* XTi is 10 megapixel vs. 8MP
* XTi is 3fps vs. 2.5fps
* XTi has a nicer interface
* XTi has a bigger LCD
* XTi has a deeper buffer, so more shots in quick succession before it has to slow down and write them to card
* XTi has a dust reduction system, which sucks but is slightly better than nothing
* XTi ownership lets you feel superior to people who could only afford the XT
