Is there going to be a predecessor or new model that will be replacing the Nikon D40 within 12 months? From what I've experienced it's a great camera but I want to make sure that there's nothing that's been announced before I drop my money.

What are you going to photograph with for the ear you are waiting for some possible mystery camera? Buying a camera now and using it for a year will get you better pictures than no camera and worrying about the prices like it was a stock market investment.

No one here or anywhere else on the internet has secret inside knowledge they can share on what Nikon is going to do almost a year from now.

Buy a fucking camera and use it. Stop worrying about this bullshit.

Buy a Pentax

Wait until after Nikon's big press event this Thursday. If the replacement isn't announced there, it likely won't be out until PMA in the spring.

The D40 WILL be replaced shortly, but now's a good time to get one on the cheap.

A supposed "beta tester" reported to Nikon Rumors today that he'd been testing an un-named "everyman" camera from Nikon, so I wouldn't be surprised to see an imminent release of a D40 successor. (But what will they call it? D50's already taken, D45?)

D60X?

Just a wild guess, but maybe they'll make a D40x or a D60 after the D40.

Go to somewhere with hills and mountains and you'll see plenty of roads like that.

if you're in the UK, and have a bit more money available than the price of a d40 kit... get a brand new fuji s5 pro (built into a nikon d200 casing), currently available for £420, which is a hell of a bargain, and a £60 sigma kit lens from jessops or whereever, and you'll have a kickass camera kit, for £490 odd shipped, and you won't get fed up with the slightly crippled and annoying d40 in a year's time. It takes amazing photos of people, though does have some downsides. Ken rockwell doesn't like it too much, but thats because he never takes photos of anything other than rusting scrap metal and his baby. Check out the dpreview forums, the dynamic range on it is amazing.

I can vouch for the dynamic range of the S3 Pro, but the operating speed/ease and image review speed are dismal compared to even my shitty D40.
Great because of IQ and F-mount lenses.
Crap for interface and battery usage.

>> No Nikon Press Event for November 20

>> Fotosidan has confirmed that there will be no Nikon press conference on November 20, as previously believed. Looks like the hopes of the Nikon D3x will have to wait a little while longer.

don't think anyone is in position to release new bodies just after photokina

probably going to wait until pma

Sorry for what I assume is a noobie question, but what is PMA?

The annual Photo Marketing Association trade show. One of the two big photography trade shows where companies release new stuff.

Though the guy you were responding to probably meant Photokina, which is the other big trade show (and which happened a couple months back; PMA was way back in Jan/Feb).
