Crap, CS3 is making RAW a hell of a lot more convenient for me. In fact, not counting cropping, I can do most of my editing simply with the RAW file...
I'll definitely start using it for panoramics though, the convenience of Batch editing and setting the WB in post is worth it alone..

Might actually have to start shooting it more often... Too bad for my poor 4GB CF cards :( I filled one up in 2 days of casual shooting.

Pic related, only edited it with basic settings in CS3's RAW convertor. resized and uploaded.

oh wow, thanks for the update

is it last year yet?

Is RAW really that much better than JPEG?

I've never used it before. What are the differences, besides quality and file size?

Can they be used on Mac?

Yes.

A lot more information in the file. You can easily adjust a RAW a stop or two in either direction without any real quality loss. Also, since no in-camera processing has happened to the file, you can decide how much or how little noise reduction to apply, set the white balance after the fact, etc. It just gives you a lot more control of how your picture ends up looking.

If you've ever used CS2 or Capture NX for editing RAW pics, you would have noticed they fucking kill any workflow you may have. CS2 has limited white balance settings, and crappy tweaking. And Capture NX is soo goddamn slow

CS3 is the happy medium, its fast, and you can do quick batch adjustments, Plus tweaking settings is quite easy.

This is about my schedule, ~2-4 days of general carry and just playing around with the camera, if there's nothing in particular I'm shooting. Just load it off when you're done, or when you know you'll need the space. It's all good.

>Is RAW really that much better than JPEG?

Yes, in the same way a negative is better than a Polaroid.

>What are the differences, besides quality and file size?

1. Flexibility. You can get the image to look exactly like you want it, whatever amount of contrast and color and so on. JPEGs are relatively stuck at how you shot them, i.e. pretty much how the marketers, software engineers, and programmers who did the firmware for the camera figure the average user of the camera would want an average shot to be converted.. They can be tweaked, but not as much, and they lose even more image quality in the process.

2. This plays into flexibility, but they push much better than JPEGs.

3. This goes into image quality, but they have more dynamic range.

4. If you mess up exposure or white balance or whatever, you're generally covered for all the above reasons.

5. Decide you want a photograph differently than you did a year ago when you took it? Or you've got a better raw converter now? Or you want more or less noise reduction for a different print size? All kosher with raw files.

>Can they be used on Mac?

Yep. For some reason, Macs are the industry standard for any sort of graphic design, photography, etc. I use Windows XP Professional. It doesn't really matter.

How so?

IT lacks the extreme low range which I need for IR photography.
Blowing highlights in sRGB on a D70 = turquoise highlights, which are ugly as hell. So AdobeRGB RAW = the only way I know to counter that. Unfortunately previously only capture NX had the ability to go low enough temperature to set a proper WB. (unless I just shot Jpeg's)

Ah. I've never done IR, so the normal sliders in any version of ACR have worked for me.

Good to know.

12, maybe 13mm = magic focal length for these shots.

I like this shot better than the last one I did. However its more of a practice run until we see some real greenery around here!
