If the problem is blowing out the sky, it'll only help when it's sunny, for the reasons ac said. If it's mostly overcast, this won't work, and you'll need something else.

It'll help with reflections, yeah. But it doesn't darken clouds the way it darkens a blue sky (I think because the sun isn't visible?), so you don't get that evening out of exposure. Not sure of the physics behind it, I just know the basics, but it doesn't work. I've tried.

Also, if you have a mix of clouds and blue sky, it'll darken the blue, depending on your angle from the sun of course, but the clouds stay the same.

I'm guessing you don't own a polarizer. How the polarizer affects the scene depends on the properties of the light hitting it, which depend on what's generating the light and what the light's bouncing off of. It'll cut out all light coming from an LCD, but not a CRT. It'll cut out a lot of light bouncing off non-metallic surfaces like a lake or a window, but won't do anything to a mirror. It'll cut out half of the light coming directly from the sky at certain times of day, but won't do anything with light that's been bouncing through a cloud first.

(Well, I suppose *technically* the Polarizer's doing the same thing no matter what--I.e., blocking light that doesn't match its polarization. But the effect produced by that action is gonna be vastly different depending on what you're pointing it at)

Overcast light is more diffuse than clear sky. The light almost seems to be coming from all over. That's why you can get almost no shadows in a scene on an overcast day. On a bright and clear day you have more direction light and obvious shadows. That's why you'll see a difference with one day compared to the other with the polarising filter.

You'll always get the best out of it when you've got the intended clearly directional light source to work with. Otherwise it's not going to do very much and none of the usual rules and guides to using the filter work properly.

What happens if you try to take a picture of the sun itself with a polariser? That is, a picture with the sun in it somewhere.

Ordinarily your sky will be white in those cases (and I got digital tearing too, which ruins pictures).
