Hi everybody, I'm a just-started photographer. I've been using an old minolta dimage 7i so far. Now I've decided to buy a DSLR. But I'm a student, dont have a lot of money, etc. seen the fact that I still have some usable lensen... What's your opinion about the Sony DSLR A300?
good enough to begin with, or recommend something else?

Live view is stupid

Get an A200 and enjoy the $whatever you just saved. If you find a cheap A100 2nd hand get it.

I have a FUJI s9000 and it's damn epic... just not 100% what you want, but if you want to fuck around, it's great!

thanks:)
but, It has to be an Digital Single Lens Reflex camera. (requirement for my study)

get the one that has 14.2 megapixels, it has more resolution

get an A900

Get A200, and put extra cash in some lenses. MAF 50/1.7 preferably.
>> Anonymous
sony a200, a300, or a350.

pick the one with the features you want. if you're really loaded go for an a700.
>> Anonymous
anything with sony on it is a beginners camera - you'll be fine....
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
Make sure you go down to a Best Buy or whatever and try 'em out. If you ask me, the A300 is absurdly uncomfortable to hold, having a body designed to look sleek looking rather than having one designed to be held by a photographer. But your mileage may vary.

I'm still pissed that the A200 feels much worse than the A100. Screw you sony making me buy A700s!
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>272543
Why would you upgrade from an A100 to an A200 anyway? That's like upgrading from a Rebel XTi to a Rebel XSi.
>> Anonymous
more like going from xt to xti

a200 has no live view, so it's lik the a100, with more resolution and larger LCD
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>272663
I just meant in terms of it being an upgrade that isn't anywhere near worth the money.
>> Anonymous
we agree to agree that sony sucks

How so? Build, ergonomics...? I'm interested in getting an A200 down the line (would be my first DSLR).
>> Anonymous

It doesn't suck. /p/ just doesn't like anything that's not Canon or Nikon. Watch the response to this comment. They also don't like being called out on their faggotry.

Ergonomics, the A200 is too round and slightly too small, its more rebel sized than the A100. This annoys me because i find the rebel to be far too small. Also the lack of DoF preview and DUAL TOP CONTROLS annoys me. The onboard flash is much closer to the lens to and much shittier.

No, ofc i wouldnt go from an A100 to an A200 but currently if i broke my A100 (always a concern) i would currently only replace it with an A200 unless 2nd hand A700s are reasonable yet.

fuck you i like my Leicas

I see, thanks. I briefly fondled one at Circuit City and it seemed ok enough.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>272793
Its probably because I like the A100 and the A700 feels a lot nicer.
>> Anonymous
>>272790DUAL TOP CONTROLS annoys me

uh, that's just a wheel to access various unctions like wb, iso and focus. instead of having hard buttons for those, which would be better

and what woud be better is dual control wheels, there's only one

oh WOE IS ME NO MORE SECOND WHEEL THAT DOESN'T CHANGE ANYTHING

>> The onboard flash is much closer to the lens to and much shittier.

yeah, they're going to change it and make it shittier

it has the same clearance and output as the old one
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>272814
>yeah, they're going to change it and make it shittier
For all my love of sony they do this on a regular basis.

Dual control wheels would always be nice but does any model in this range offer it? As for the top wheel, i liked it and all of its options also turned up in the viewfinder so i only had to turn one thing to select and then the control wheel to change it, didnt have to take my eye away to find which button (which are all resessed, horribly) i needed to mash to change the iso or w/e.

you can use all minolta AF lenses on the sony bodies.

to answer your questin: Sony a200/a300/a350/a700/a900.

pick one based on how much cash you have to blow.

>>272793

if you handled it and like it then there's nothing really more to say. All entry level DSLRs are going to get you roughly the same thing for roughly the same price. pick whichever one you like best.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>272832
Given that the 507si is not as good as the 5 then yes it will be an upgrade (as well as a digital sensor) however dont throw away the 507 either.

Roughly, A100/200/300 == 5/5D, A700 = 7/7D, A900 = 9

The person who was criticizing Sony there was the biggest Sony fanboy on /p/. Be less dumb.

it's a specialty lens. most people would see a 135/2.8 and go "wtf would i want a manual focus 135 that's only f/2.8 and is xbox hueg?"
>> SAGE
>>272960
but i thought sony would at least try to market it. they must have kept the old marketing team for it. how many pros even know about it?
>> SAGE
>>272960
sony's 135 f1.8 isnt any smaller
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>272963
Sony seems to be aiming its market at the MOAR MEGAPICKELS crowd rather than at honest-to-God photographers. Hence the A900 full-frame that has APS-C noise characteristics, hence the low-end cameras emblazoned with their resolution on the front, etc. Sony's a tech company, not a camera company, so they know how to market for specs.

Based just on the specs, the 135STF sucks. Like the previous guy said, big-ass 135mm f/2.8--and an f/2.8 that passes light like an f/4.5 no less. Sony doesn't know how to market that. You can't quantify bokeh on a spec sheet.
>> Anonymous
>>272965

minolta never really marketed things that well either.

that being said, sony has the money to not need to worry about it.
>> Anonymous
>>272965
As much as I agree with the rest of your post (you left out NR'd raw files) this just isn't true:

>Sony's a tech company, not a camera company

They're new to still cameras, but they inherited all that from Minolta, and they're huge in the video market. They could market to professionals if they wanted to. Instead, they've made the probably (financially) prudent decision to skip that small niche Canon and Nikon dominate and go for the rich schmuck market.
>> SAGE
>>272973
>go for the rich schmuck market.
seems like thats Leicas market. they would have to develop a rangefinder with the a900 sensor....
