newb question Anonymous
is this how you focus and recompose?
>> Anonymous
see the picture for my question

i couldn't write it better, so i just drew it

pretty much, i'm in center AF because i don't want to use all AF points because the camera picks random ones all the time

but i want to know if that's the right way to focus and recompose with center AF point
>> Anonymous
yeah, unless whatever camera your using is on continuous auto focus which would be C+AF or something like that in the menu, i think, maybe thats just for olys
>> Anonymous
no, i'm in one shot AF

thanks, dude
>> Anonymous
My camera has an option to move the AF target over. So you just hit the left arrow and the AF target is now on your leftmost person. Also it has Continuous AF but I don't really understand what it does. It puts a huge square on the picture and other than that seems to function like regular AF except it kills the batteries.

maybe you should stop using a point-and-shoot

I'm trying. I'm the guy with the B&W thread turned to *ist Vs. A100 for first DSLR thread. I just don't have enough money yet but I'm starting to get close.

>>223965

definitely the pentax

the sonys feel like a slr made for the point-and-shoot crowd

the pentaxes feel like real cameras made for photographers

inb4 nikon for photographers heavyfaggot speech
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>223967
If you mean made a camera that is comfortable to hold (def so over the canikon entries) and has the same auto modes that everyone else has then yes, otherwise no you're just trolling.

I've never read up on pentax bodys/lenses and to write them off because their advertising sucks is TOTALLY FAIR, ok.
>> Haddock !!xREx2m9lgBs
No, because I am not a faggot, and therefore do not use AF.

just because i disagree with you and i'm trolling?

ask any canon or nikon user what they would choose between a pentax and a sony

no one would pick the sony

but that aside, pentax offers features that others simply overlook or don't want to put on their cameras

dual wheels, weather sealing, dedicated hard buttons for every single feature, customizable buttons

pentax doesn't go, hmmm how do i market this shit to people buying point-and-shoots. they make it for real photographers who don't give a shit about things like live view

sony goes, hey guys, it's got a live view mode like a point-and-shoot and a tilting screen!

and let's not forget the button that tells you to not press it

I love my Canon's joystick and CF 13.2 <3
Though, I might have to change it back to 0 because of my new battery grip. :(
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
I'll be honest...if I didn't already have Canon lenses, I'd gladly shoot Pentax.

I don't care about brand loyalty that much though, technical details aside most brands are pretty much equal anyway except for Olympus, but I don't really think they're inferior, it's just that they're a different system entirely.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>223980
I havent said pentax are bad, no one would choose sony over pentax because sony hasnt been about long but would you say that everyone would choose pentax over minoltasony?

I'm not even reccomending the sony over the pentax! Stop trying to troll me.

Trolling you would be saying that why would anyone want to choose the 3rd best brand since pentax dont have any market share they must be doing _everything_ wrong (bar using 4/3rds) to be lower than Sony who have been only in the industry for a short time, but i didnt. Till now obviously.

Just personally I'd prefer Pentax over Minolta, but I can understand why a lot of persons would prefer Minolta. The old stuff, the minolta X* series are amazing, same for some Maxxums and ofcourse the nine.
However, Sony just feels like it bought Minolta for the mount and lens catalog (Smart decision), but I don't see the real minolta ergonomics returned into the Sony dSLRs..
>> Anonymous
pentax has more legendary lenses than minolta

and that's a sorry ass excuse to be using sony

let's see, do i want to scavenge the used market or pay extravagant sony prices

or do i just get excellent pentax lenses directly from pentax
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>224008
Why do people like you always think it's got to be one or the other because one has just _got_ to be superior or something? I really don't get it, even the worst DSLRs on the market are still perfectly usable cameras, and buying used lenses isn't hard at all. So what's the point in trying to start an argument about it?
>> Anonymous
>>224008
Have any of you used the *ist actually? Anyone perhaps used both the A100 and *ist? That would be very helpful.

WHY COULDNT ALL OF YOU GEAR FAGS LET THIS THREAD DIE.
i answered the guys question, thats all that was needed, this unbelievable trolling REALLY needs to end.

>>223960
the continuous focus will continue to focus on whatever is in that box i guess, on my camera (e-510) you dont really notice it either you just see things get sharper and unsharp, i can only seeing it being useful if you doing some sort of sport or something where the subject will be moving in and out of focus.

>>224005
Sony did indeed by minolta for the mount (best way into a market) but the A100 and A700 are very similar to the 5D and 7D resepectivly.

>>224008
The only "Legendary" glass i know from minolta is their 500/8 AF and the STF. They had a rep for producing rather silly focal lengths on occasion (did they have a 57mm?) Pentax i've never heard of producing anything special but do see my above comment on my lack of hearing _anything_ about pentax.

Haven't handled a 5D/7D, sadly.
Pentax has some pretty sweet stuff. Picture related, sweet pancakes. Their 85mm lenses are really good, so is the average pentax quality anyhow.
I suppose you don't hear a lot about it is because pentaxfags are actually out and taking pictures!

I've always heard that Pentax has a really good lens lineup, I think their problem is just that they're terrible at marketing, like you said.

which sucks for them from a business standpoint I guess, but at least they don't seem to be manipulated as easily by the prosumer market.

>>224116
Yeah, that's probably why you don't hear from them a lot. Which is okay, I suppose. It makes them pretty cheap on the second hand market. Their older SLR bodies are really great as well. The SMC Takumar lenses are pretty legendary, yet very easy to get.
>> Anonymous
>>224118
Pentax wasn't the only one using radioactive glass. The radiation levels are too low to be harmful, though.
>> Butterfy !xlgRMYva6s
>>224114
I wasnt sure about pancakes (was thinking olympus) but aside from ooh cool its chibi is their anything useful for them?

Yeah they can be good for street / sticking slr into pocket but trying to hide an slr is like trying to be economical in a hummer.

Certianly pentax needs to get their advertising sorted. With sony trying to make themselves joint leaders, pentax/olympus/sigma/lolwut are going to get raped by their godly advertising division.
>> Anonymous
>>224145
Not really, you've said it all. It's a great lens though, even compared to normal lenses.

True, Sony's doing a good job on the advertising. I doubt about rapeage though, sony seems to be pretty consisted on the target group they're aiming at, and it's more the youngsters that run around with bridge cameras, if you ask me.

All I ever really shoot is Super- or Super-Multi-Coated Takumars. They're amazing lenses. Sharp as a pin, smooooth focus and aperture rings, and all-metal construction. You don't get that kind of thing anymore. Also I love having the aperture ring on the lens. I still haven't gotten used to spinning a dial on the camera body to set aperture.

Now if only I had a DSLR with a bigger focus screen or a split prism...I can hardly see critical focus at all on my rebel. Cmon EOS 5D MkII!

Trolling is not openly admitting you dont know what lenses exist, trolling would be saying there are no legendary lens because ive never heard of them.

I dont doubt that pentax have made some stunning glass and bodies, but if no one has heard of them then they might as well not exist.

Haha. Butterfly is our own trolling teacher <3
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>224031
Yes! Thank you.

As time passes I increasingly don't mind Butterfly because he/she is relatively increasingly reasonable compared to the rest of /p/. Butterfly just claimed that Sonys are nicer to hold than Canikon entry level cameras (not an unfair assessment), and then said that he couldn't pass judgement on Pentax. And then anon goes into attack mode. I agree that Sony has turned out some total shit lately (A300/350), but there's no need to say it in the thread if you need to twist other people's words to mention it.

And all this legendary lens bullshit is ridiculous. Why the fuck would you buy into a system based on how many lenses in it are worshipped by other people? Sure, they might be good (AT WHAT THEY DO, MAYBE NOT WHAT YOU NEED), but most of us aren't going to buy Linhof Technikas because the Voigtlander Apo-Lanthar 210/4.5 is legendary, or Contax II's because of the Zeiss Jena Sonnar 50/1.5's famed swirly bokeh. Buy shit based on your own needs, not based on whether your system has an STF that you'll never fucking own.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>224561
Im quite tempted by a 500/8 actually..

Anyway, kina thanks i guess? Besides, even i think the 300/350 is shit, remember?
>> Anonymous
What about the A200?
>> Anonymous
That's how I focus, OP.

Sometimes, I have the AF mapped to the AE button near my thumb, so I don't have to squeeze the shutter - I can just lock into the focus and recompose.

Some guy saw me shooting like that and yelled at me, telling me that I'll always be out of focus. He was an idiot.
>> Anonymous
>>224561
Actually I was planning on getting the 1.5 sonnar, even if just because I now do own a Contax and would love to see how good it really is. Haha.

Anyhow, nice to see some well thought out posts on /p/ again.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>224621
Yeah I meant to mention that. It's hard for anyone to not hate on those pieces of shit.

(For what it's worth, I'm also not a big A100 fan, but liking it certainly doesn't warrant all the hating here)
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>224634
I wanted to hunt down an uncoated one and mod it to Leica screw mount but goddamn it's hard to find good prices on those things.

Also I really am thinking of getting an Apo-Lanthar (and a camera to go with it). Those were the only two examples I could come up with at the time though.

Now that I think about it, how about buying a D40 for the Noct-Nikkor, or a Bessa T for the Noctilux? Oh man I could go on all day.
>> Anonymous
>>224648
Go for it! Large format is fun.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>224651
Look up Apo-Lanthar prices and you'll see why I haven't done it yet.

Even something basic like a Graphic set is essentially nonexistent in my area (where I can walk into any store and come out with a bucketload of fairly priced Leica Ms, so this is not normally a problem with old gear), and I don't think I'm good enough to play eBay roulette yet.
