Actually yeah it is you take away half the interest of the photo which is the natural lighting and the shadows. Learn how to not fuck up photos.

Sorry for the outburst it doesn't do any good. I guess what I wanted to get across is that proper photo manipulation imo is to play into the natural strengths of the photo rather then try to create artificial ones.

what does /p/ think about this one. Its my personal favorite from the set.
>> Anonymous
>>65599

It's an ok shot, the highlights are blown out though.
>> Anonymous
>>65602

It was soooooo bright out and there was literally no shade, and its not everyday that you come across a lawnmower in a creek, any suggestions for making it a better shot.
>> Anonymous
My only suggestion would be to get closer to it, fill out the shot with it a little more so you can expose for the lawn mower instead of splitting the difference between way too bright and too dark. You could also probably manage a better composition if you were closer to it.

What happened is that you metered the camera on one of the darkest elements of the shot, understandably so they could come out ok. So next time find something that is a balance between the highlights and the shadows to meter on. That way they are both exposed enough to retain detail and then you can adjust them both in post processing. It really is just trial and error. Getting a lens hood would be helpful to cut some of the ambient lighting (minor).

It's true by doing this>>65605
This>>65606can be avoided somewhat.

if the composition allows it you can meter specifically for your shadow or your highlight, or split the difference for extremely high contrast, but you're basically sacrificing the majority of your detail. That means the composition has to be strong enough to pick up the slack. One way this can pay off is if the transitional area is dramatic and interesting enough to be framed in pure white white and pitch black. Just keep in mind that you're filling the frame with negative space, even if something is going on. If the camera is metered several stops away from any region in frame picture that region as being void of detail and see if the picture still makes sense.

Hopefully a decent example of what I just said.
