With the barrel of the lens resting on my left palm there is absolutely no way to rotate the focus ring more than about 10 degree in either direction with the thumb and index finger. The only way to get a sizable fraction of the rotation available with the hand the other way is to support the lens by the focus ring.
Next - if you shot normal and short lenses, and I assume that you're man and that your hands are not that much smaller than mine, there is no way to support the lens in the palm and not have the thumb and index finger ahead of the front of the lens! So what you are saying, kind of doesn't make any sense. Please take a shot of your hand holding as you described with a normal or short lens mounted
