Shot this about an hour ago. I was trying to photograph the meteor shower - I saw a few, but didn't get any on camera. ;_;

First attempt at night photography, any c&c is appreciated.

i think that's pretty fucking awesome for your first attempt, OP.
well done!

the only crit i have is that you probably should've turned the indoor lights on as the bottom of the photo is a little bright for my liking.
the location of the middle star around which the others rotate is beautiful.

good stuff man.

cool picture, i've not shot night photography yet but this is making me want to.

it sucks 'cause where i live there is constant fog overhead, so i can't take any shots of the meteor shower :(

remotes are what.. like 10 bucks?
buy one, it's the safest way to avoid annoying blur in long exposure shots

I did, but you could just set your camera to 'self timer'.

Some tips/what I did:

Find the North Star and point your camera towards it, all the other stars rotate around it (obviously its really us rotating).

I took 4 eight minute exposures and then shooped them together. If I didn't do it that way light pollution would be a much bigger problem.

I took 1 exposure that was about 2 minutes long with a wider aperture - thats how I got recognisable stars at the end of the light trails.

Use a wide aperture.

you need a remote for 60 seconds+ exposures

Oh yeah, you're right, you need a remote to lock the shutter open.

where can i get a good ten dollar remote? i don't trust the cheap ebay stuff very much, but if they work for you, ten bucks is worth trying it out

i did a 17 minute exposure, a while ago, after our car broke down, on the side of the road... it got fucked up though, when my friends dad, accidentally kicked my tripod, and didn't tell me until after i got home... fuckin bastard.
