OK /p/ can you help me out here?

I'm looking to buy an EOS 400D and this site seems to have some pretty good deals. You get a memory card (I'm assuming Compact Flash), a case, a couple tripods and some other junk with your purchase. There is a possibility that I'll have to buy better quality accessories, but initially, those things will come in handy.

Anyways, there are a bunch of different lenses to choose from and I really don't know anything about lenses. I researched a bit and found that the first one (28-80mm f/3.5-5.6) is pretty shitty, so I won't get that. And dpreview said that the kit lens (18-55mm) kinda sucks too.

So I'm left with the rest of the choices (unless the 18-55mm isn't that bad; I kind of like the range). I'm willing to go up to $599 unless you can convince me to spend 20 extra dollars for the $619 options.

I've gone and looked up most of the lenses on Canon's site and I can't make heads or tails of the damn charts and icons.

Of course, I'll to a bit more research before buying, but what would you recommend me to get? Keep in mind that this would probably be my only lens for a while. While telephoto is fun, I'd probably stick with ~35mm for most of my pictures.

I'm a bit wary of buying online other than places like amazon, but they seem legit.

Buy a used 20D on craigslist.

Oh, and once you save up the money to buy it from a company that will actually sell you a 400D rather than shipping you a Kodak FunSaver and charging you a $30 restocking fee when you send it back to them and demand what you ordered, I'd recommend getting the EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS. Note that 'IS' at the end. It's different from the basic 18-55 kit lens, both in that it has image stabilization and better optics, but will cost you roughly an extra hundred bucks.

Oh wow, thanks guys.

I just based my information off

which looks kind of shady too.

Anyways, my point still stands for the future. Any help?

>>171944Any help?

- buy the camera body, and the 18-55 IS separately.
- buy a battery/vertical grip to improve ergonomics and increase battery life
- buy extra batteries
- buy CF cards, 2/4 GB
- buy bag for all of the above.
- if there is left over money, buy the EF 50mm f/1.8 for $80

for your starter lens, 18-55 IS or if you want to indulge

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens (optically excellent, EF-S mount only)
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens (optically excellent)
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens (optically excellent)
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens (EF-S mount only)
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM Lens
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens (EF-S mount only)
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

but there's no reason to own any of these for a beginner

Good site for fagging out on Canon lenses.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/

All the links to buy are to B&H which is where you usually want to buy the stuff from anyways.

Canon XT is $389 at Amazon

the kit is $449

the 18-55 IS is $175, so you're still under $600 if you get the XT body

I'll wait until the 400D or 450D goes down in price. I still have a lot of life left in my A520.
