What does /p/ recommend for a beginner? Also, I am going to get a wide-angle-lens. HELP?!
>> sunshine
Anything BUT a D40, if you're going to buy more lenses for it.

Price range?

Something cheaper to start out with.
>> sunshine

D80 if you can go for it.
Or go into Canon, but I barely know anything about their prosumers.. other than the fact they don't have gay AF-S on any of them like Nikon.
>> OP
So, any insight on a lrns then?

Sorry, 'lens'* I meant.

What are your reasons for wanting a wide angle?
>> Anonymous
canon 1000D entry level, cheap, good. i think they come with basic wide angle and distance lenses.

Do not listen to this guy, OP, he's a fucking idiot trying to undermine your acquiring of a satisfying purchase. Avoid olympus like the plague if what you seek is wide angle.

why does olympus =/= wide angle
>> Anonymous
>>295917

Same and wrongfag. There are seventeen lenses in the Four-Thirds system that go down to wide angle focal lengths, fifteen of them current production.
>> Anonymous
>>295923

oh hai,>>295918here

please name those 15 lenses that go down below 35mm (35mm equivalent), are rectilinear, are under $500

Truth

D40 blows nuts

Even if you're not going to get more lenses
>> Anonymous
>>295932

There's several 18mm starting lenses, which are also wide. So:

Sigma 18-50, $139
Olympus 14-42, $229.95
Olympus 18-180, $382.95 (has to be shit, though, to be fair)
Olympus 14-54, $389.95
Sigma 18-50 f/2.8, $419

There's a few more in the ~$600 range, and if someone can afford a $500 lens they can afford a $600 one.

Source for this was B&H's listing of new prices, source for the other count was the Four-Thirds website.

Why $500, though? Unless you're looking and it's your budget, it's a pretty arbitrary limit.

Also all the kit zooms would start wide, but there could be duplication with that list.

>>295938
18mm on Olympus is 36mm equivalent FoV which isn't really wide at all.
>> Anonymous
>>295941
A) Yes it is; 35mm is definitely wide and this is just a millimeter more, and it's not like it's at the crazy wide end where a millimeter is drastic. <40mm = wide.
B) Even if you are going to make 35mm on 3:2 the cutoff, the extra vertical room on 4:3 means that 18mm on Four-Thirds is probably more like 35mm than 36.

>>295938Why $500, though? Unless you're looking and it's your budget, it's a pretty arbitrary limit.

because anything wider on olympus is exponentially more expensive

I'm in the same boat as you OP.

After about a week of intensive research I'm pretty much set on a Nikon D300. For all the lenses And extras I want I'm going to be paying about $1400.

As far as I can see it's the best I can get without going full frame: a format that nearly doubles the cost.

i don't think you know what exponentially means

lol wut, link to $14000 D300 with lenses and extras

Here's a kit on Ebay I like for $1500 :
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-D300-Digital-SLR-Camera-2-VR-Lens-8GB-Kit-USA_W0QQitemZ350127200116QQcmdZV
iewItemQQptZDigital_Cameras?hash=item350127200116&_trksid=p4295.c0.m299&_trkparms=240:1318

Buying the stuff separate from other retailers, and dropping the shit I don't want (like the magazine subscription) I can save another hundred.

the cost is infinite. duh

That includes a battery clip/bottom grip too.
>> Anonymous
>>295959
I'll be buying it all credit card. If it's not legit I'll just refute the charges.
It's called "consumer protection".
>> Anonymous
>>295962
Nevermind, you're just getting shit lenses with it.
>> Anonymous
>>295984
What's wrong with them? They're not kit.
>> Anonymous
>>295991
Yes they are. It's a waste putting a $150 zoom lens on a D300. You'd be better off with a D80/90 and a better lens. Also, that ebay camera is a demo so who knows what it's been through.
>> Anonymous
cameta is legit. i've bought there.

the d300 is wonderful.

those lenses aren't pro quality, so i assume that is why some people are sticking up their noses. but if you just want a really good camera and some lenses to cover most necessary ranges and start with, it's a fine kit.

the mags and stuff are bullshit.

the one thing i'd mention is that this is a factory demo camera, so be very careful that it's clean and works.

you'll need more cards and batteries.
>> Anonymous
>>295999
There's nothing wrong with cheap lenses. It just doesn't make sense to put them on a nice body like the D300. It's putting the cart before the horse.
>> Anonymous
>>296002
QFT, if your gonna get a d300 at least get some nice lenses.

or just get a lower model and get nicer lenses.

its all very well having 12mp or whatever it is, but if the lenses cant resolve decent 12mp images then its pointless.
>> Anonymous
motherfuckers need to just put the maximum and minimum FoV in some sort of angle measurement (I would prefer radians b/c I'm a mathfag but i really wouldn't give a shit if degrees were given. now that I think about it, degrees would probably be better b/c all the lenses won't be at nice incriments. For instance, 35.6 degrees would be a bitch to express in radians) </avoidradiansversusdegreesshitstorm>
>> Anonymous
>>296019

Now I remember why people like us were beaten up at school. God damn you need to get out more.
>> Anonymous
>>296019
but then again, if it were expressed in radians, it would be much easier to determine the length of an in-focus object. however, if one is going to the trouble of determining the length of an in-focus object, an extra conversion isn't much trouble.

Nikon d40, kit lens, Sigma 10-20.
>> Anonymous
>>295869
yup, I got my D50 from Cameta. I recommend them

That Sigma is f/4-5.6

Isn't that a little high?
>> Anonymous
>>296014
>>296002
Can you reccoment a good, lower-apeture lens? Maybe just a brand?
>> Anonymous
>>296081That Sigma is f/4-5.6

that's including crop factor, so in reality, it's f/2.6-3.7
