I dunno, makes sense. Can't really tell what the Canons are, but a 16-35/2.8L and 28-70/2.8L combo isn't insane on a pair of 5Ds. Then a black Oly with b/w film and a fast prime.

For shooting a wedding? I'd be surprised to see the person with only one camera. That's only three. So two digitals to make sure she gets the bread & butter shots she needs, and a little film camera for the artsy stuff.

Wow, you're an idiot. Every serious wedding shooter, from the modern 1D users to the alternative Pentax guys to even hardcore omg film Leica fo' life crazies use multiple cameras.

Considering hiring a photographer can spiral into the thousands of dollars, what idiot would risk that much income by not bringing a backup? Unless you like getting sued in small claims court.

Fuck these posers. I once shot three weddings at the same time in three separate churches, all with a single box camera loaded up with expired Agfapan 25. All three brides loved the pictures so much that they immediately started annulment proceedings in the hopes that they could sleep with me instead.

I charge at least three grand per shoot (more if I'm spending the whole day with the couple, like I usually do) and I'm a Britfag.

Maybe you're just a poor person who doesn't know someone who can afford a good photographer, but you don't know anything about the wedding market. Last year I shot just over 20 weddings (I've been working abroad a lot more recently with my other clients) and I took over one hundred thousand in receipts in my last fiscal year.
>> Anonymous
>>161437

All the wedding photographers I know use one body at a time. They bring backups, but they're not schlepping around multiple bodies on them. They're dealing with a flash, a bracket, a pro body or a 5D, and usually a 24-70/2.8 zoom. They're not going to be lugging around multiples. Only time I've heard of them doing that is if they're shooting a wedding on the beach, where they won't want to switch lenses.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>161594
No one shows up to a wedding with one body. Maybe they'll have one body on them, but there is always, always a backup. I use my backup at the same time, generally with a much different special purpose lens on it.

I've only been to one wedding since I started paying attention to such things, but the photographer was dual-wielding the whole time (5D and a 1D II, I believe).

Also, he had an assistant with at least one other camera.

If nothing else, one body with a standard zoom and the other with a fast prime for your nice shallow DoF shots would make a lot of sense. Hell, I often carry two cameras just going out for a stroll.

I've done seven or eight weddings, and learned very quickly that you NEED more than one camera.

Shit happens fast. VERY fast. Almost as fast as sports.

>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ

Maybe you are just a half-wit who can't read? Perhaps you were raised in a barn and don't know anything about the English language or manners? Try reading that post again and properly this time before falling over yourself in a rush to tell me how wrong I am and how right you are. You are clearly very a classy guy to act like such a cock head without provocation.

>>161707

Which is what I said originally, but apparently I am wrong and know nothing because one guy personally makes more than (NEVER! GOSH! YOU DON'T SAY!) that and "knows all about the market". It seems that anyone who dares to question the pay scale for the bottom of the heap must be shit upon for such blasphemy. Sheesh. I didn't expect it to be such a touchy subject, especially if someone is apparently doing okay.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>161713
You don't have to be good to charge a lot, in Fact in Canada here its generally smart (Even if you suck) To charge more than you think you are worth, JUST because if you are cheap people assume your pictures will be inferior.
Its like a multiplier effect, The shitty photog's charge 1000, so the actual good photographers charge 1500, then the 1000$ rookies, raise their price to 1500 so they don't seem inferior, and the pro's now charge 2000$

Right now well known pros charge around $2500-3000. And the hacks charge about 1500-2200. (I know I see them all the time, they ask me for advice on things that would make you cringe...)
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL

Heres a quote of what someone asked me
(Shes a wedding photographer, charges 1000$, + $100 an hour on location, and shes booked every weekend of the summer pretty much)

"ok i have a question for ya.. i jsut got my 50 mm f1.8and i want to figure out what it is BEST used for.. so i was just playing around outside and taking picture of random thigns and of my son playing but I am still not seeing 100% of the value. i know its a good lense but i wonder if you can give me an idea of what to shoot at... like outdoors wise so i can learn... (liek a leaf on a tree or the tree itself.) the way i understood it was that the objects in the foreground are sharpe and clear but the background would be out of focus.. but i still find some of my pcitures to be focused!"
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>161722

Totally. I agree with that. It's usually bad thing to charge less as people think it means they are worse too, even if they aren't as bad as some hack in the middling ground. I'm just saying that the bottom end is surprisingly cheap compared to the top end and world-class NYC photographers and what they charge.

There's a huge gulf of a difference out there between the top and bottom.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>161722

>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>161723

Hah! I've heard of stuff like that too. Pretty funny, really. It's all about the difference between being good at business and being good at photography. A good head for business will get someone farther than great art but no way to sell it. Best of both is always nice.

I've seen some old hands that were semi-retired charging pennies and some student that hadn't even graduated charging more and the results were clearly worse from what I saw.

>>161723

How many times do DeviantArt users get brought up?
How many times does Ken Rockwell get brought up?

Do you have a grudge against Vincent for bothering to keep track of how many times he brings this up?
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>161833

If I saw a worse photographer stealing jobs from the good ones or generally being a pain to the regular professionals I suppose I would have sympathy for the decent ones (although if it was a disaster, it's only serves as a warning for other couples to look to the other more trustworthy ones). I'd always have more respect for someone who tries to be professional and do a good job than some bluffing hack who takes the money without knowing what they were doing.

Also: They took our jerbs!

writing a whole paragraph, an entire paragraph, not just one line, isn't light hearted

6th time? maybe lol, You guys know how it is when they take our jerb's!
though that quote is pretty new, I was just talking to her last week when she sent me that.

Personally I found it relevant to the thread talking about how cheap photographers are generally thought of as inferior (Even though that is definitely not necessarily the case)

Also for the guy who remembers everything, I don't really like shooting weddings. Sure I like the bucketloads of money I get from them, but I only do them by request and don't advertise that I shoot them either.
