I was at a butterfly garden today. I took over 250 photos, but only a few of some quails so here's all the good quail pics. I'll make a separate thread later for the butterflies, but I gotta sort em out and photoshop em and stuff.
I just do photograph as a hobby and I don't have the best equipment.
Feedback and advice much appreciated, but remember I'm not going out and buying new equipment.

Shooting in jpeg?
I had this camera, I *know* it's slower-going when shooting in raw, but trust me, shoot in raw. It's a whole different machine when you do. If fuji didn't gimp the shit out of the JPEG rendering on this series of cameras, I'd probably still have one as a throw-around camera.

I'm a n00b. How do I change that setting? You owned the camera so it'll be easier for you to tell me than for me to figure it out.

Also while we're at it, maybe you can help me. The thing I hate most about this camera is it's complete inability to focus on anything within a foot of the lens at all, even when on macro lens. It's like 1/5th of the time it just decides to focus. I can't figure out what the hell the problem is. And I'm talking manual or auto mode of course.
I tried manual focus (which is HORRIBLE on this camera) and that didn't help either.

I've had some problems with the autofocus on a Canon Powershot, and I usually back off a bit from whatever I'm trying to shoot if the autofocus. To combat this, I also use the zoom feature to zoom in on what I wanted to take a closeup of, and it almost always works.

Unfortunately my camera doesn't save files outside of jpeg, so I can't give you any tips on how to change that. It also tends to differ between camera companies, because it's in the menus and therefore entirely in the programming.

hello, I'm not OP but I m intersted in shooting in RAW with my fuji, unfortunately when I try it, I can't read the .raf file with photoshop...
and the plug in from adobe doesn't work. is there a way to read it with photoshop? or do you suggest to use the Fuji software (which I dont really like).
thanks.

If the ACR plug-in won't work with your camera, you need either a newer version of ACR or a newer version of Photoshop that supports the more recent version of ACR. I had to upgrade, too, to support the Panasonic superzoom I bought. If you don't have the money, as someone said in another thread around here, lol Internet.

Does anyone have anything to say about my photography? Cause I fucking love my first picture. It's so cute!

The thumb looks awesome but it falls flat when opened, I think.
>>72914
I don't have it anymore but it should be in the set-up menu page one or two "CCD-RAW"
>>72916
the macro isn't really that great but it does focus closer when wide than when tele. so zoom out. If it can't find focus, it probably just can't focus that close.
>>72939
I actually preferred s7raw's output vs ACR. It's free, so check it out

Which one? Why?
I think they're awesome. I do believe only two of them have any flaws.
Anyhow I already know how to change the resolution on the camera but it says nothing about raw. I looked it up in the manual but it still never mentioned raw. It did say something about being 2 different modes for 5MP, one being "F" and one "N" and it never defines them, but "F" (fine?) is a bigger file size than "N" (normal?) so I assume that's it.

Also, I once owned the camera model by Fuji made just before this one, s7000 I think. It was an *awesome* camera and had no issues at all but it broke and I replaced it with this because it was newer. My god do I regret it, they destroyed it with horrible design. I think I may never buy from fuji again.
I might actually sell this piece of crap (cost me $400) and get a better one. I recall the other camera had a 12MB raw mode. Maybe I'll just get a used one.

Very cool. I wish my camera didn't suck so I could take pics like that. Or I'm probably doing something wrong too.
I understand that>>72889and>>72892aren't perfect but the first two pics in this thread seem like it to me, am I right?

That poor male! lol

They're just a bunch of fucking quails. Actually, if they were fucking, they'd be a hell of a lot more interesting...

However, the first and last pic are good and without any real flaws, but like I said, they're just pics of quails.

>>73001
OP here. Last pic has some serious sharpness issues. Even I know that, but I thought the subject was interesting enough to make up for it. I posted it last for a reason.
But if you don't find quails cute than I can't help you. I care more about how they are photographically more than if you like quails or not. I posted these in /an/ as well because I figured I'd get a response more about how cute they were. I posted here for photography advice.
So really your opinion is invalid.

I swear it's like god forbid you should take a photo of something pretty or cute. You have to take really weird photos of ugly subjects to be considered interesting around here.

it's not in the F menu, it's in the camera set up menu. You'll shit bricks when you see the difference in quality. Fuji's noise shmearing is heavy-handed to the point of ridiculousness.
>>73007
I think a lot of people think they have to make something artistically or aesthetically significant every time they trip the shutter. If I do a couple prints I'm proud of a month then I'm happy

Alright I figured this out. It wasn't easy. I shot the pic in raw but my computer didn't detect it as a photo so I had to go into the drive and cop some .raf file, which would only open in photoshop. I messed around and saved it to a reasonable size as a .jpg and this is how it came out.
Then I shot essentially the same image (I had to turn on the macro lens this time, it wouldn't focus) in jpg.
And you're right about the camera being slower. It takes like 10 seconds to process the damed thing.
This image is the raw, the next image is the jpg.

Here's the other, non-raw photo. It looks like the raw is absolutely full of noise. Variations in iso and such settings may help but it's obviously considerably easier to not use raw and more likely to be a decent picture.
