Shutter sound Anonymous
Hi /p/! I was told that the canon 350d and 400d has some sort of microphone and speaker amplifying the shutter sound. Thats just bullshit right??

SLRs don't have to fake shutter sounds

350d and 400d are SLRs

and if anything, people would rather have a more discreet shutter sound

Yep, why would you want a louder shutter sound?

Yeah thats what I thougth!

Hmm...
I'll have to keep this in mind before I decide to buy an SLR.

When I first got my DSLR, my girlfriend asked me why I hadn't turned off the click noise like I usually do first thing with my digital cameras.

But yeah, there's no microphone and speaker amplifying the shutter sound. That's completely absurd. I think someone was pulling your leg. Or someone's leg, anyway.

lol, yeah, I got the "why's it so loud" from my girlfriend when I bought my first SLR.

Yeah, can't always use them for discreet shooting. It's no wonder some people opt for more silent rangefinders (leica/bessa for example), compact (but good) digicams or some TLRs.

Rebels are much quieter than xxD series. They sound like you're shooting phasors. Pssseww!

nope, 40D is less noisy than 400D

and it has a silent mode as well, not truly silent but better than nothing

speaking of which, does the d200 have a relatively quiet shutter? i plan on upgrading from my d70 and a quiet shutter would just be another incentive to get off my ass and get one.

Why the fuck would you want a quiet shutter if you're not trying to hide the camera? It's not like it causes that much shake. And a manly shutter sound is like screaming out FUCK YEAH every time you take a shot.

Well, "trying to hide the camera" is often part of getting good candid event shots. So don't dismiss that so easily.

Another situation I've personally been in where a quieter shutter would've been nice was shooting a stage performance. Though at the little after-party afterwards, the performers told me that they were amused by the fact that they could tell who I thought was the hottest by the frequency of shutter releases they heard from the stage.

and by performers, you mean strippers

Kinda the opposite, in fact. It was the Vagina Monologues. Which sounds way, way cooler than it is, but at least several of the women doing the monologues were hot. So I just sort of ignored the waves and waves of anti-penis and stared at the hot chicks, thereby more or less *completely* missing the point of the show.

This is why I love my Minolta 5D, it sounds like the earth falling apart when taking a shot.
