Cannonamous
Hello, /p/

I've got some money, a little talent and a lot of interest in digital photography. I'm looking at these two cameras, I've been a user of a Sony for about two years, yet I'm split between these two models. I don't really care for the features much but I want them. I've done my own research but I want a final opinion.

Please recommend!
ALSO: Should I just op out an go for a DSLR? I'm concerned about the movie-mode I'm missing, I have SOME talent and A LITTLE experience so will it make a difference in my case? (In terms of manual controls, etc, which I also want.)

If you want zoom really badly and don't have more than $2000 in the next year or so to spend ont eh camera, get the Ultra zooms

otherwise DSLR for the win
>> Cannonamous
damn I overlooked the ZOMG ULTRA ZOOM part. hell, I had no intention of zooming at all. I'll have to do more research for a DSLR since money is kind of a problem above $650.

The s5 has a hotshoe, so if you ever wanna buy a better flash and then just use that on a dslr later on, you could. Also AC said something about a 0cm macro feature.

If you want the best quality, get a dSLR. The quality you get out of an SLR's sensor completely blows away the quality you'll get from any superzoom, and your low-light ability with an SLR completely pwns any superzoom out there (thanks to the ability to shoot at ISO400 with less noise than a superzoom will do ISO100, and the ability to stick on a fast f/1.8 lens)

The Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XT are both going for around $500-$600

I've been using my mom's S5-IS while I save for a DSLR. It's pretty nice, but the fact that it uses AA's is a pain in the ass. Same goes for the little flap that contains the batteries and SD card. That said, it has a 12x zoom which is pretty nice. It's a nice camera, but a DSLR will definitely beat it (with the right lens).

No idea on the sony. Pic is random one with S5.

If you have no interest in zoom, buy a dslr body and a fast prime to go with it.
>> hella awesome
dslr all the way!
sony makes a bad ass one!

I will grant you 'bad' and 'ass' separately. 'bad ass' is a bit of a stretch.

the only actual difference between the Canon and the Nikon are that the Nikon has >slightly< better image quality overall from what I've tested, and that Canon can under the right circumstances shoot very slightly faster.
Either one is win, though I personally went for the Nikon.

errr, that's a Sony. But I understand your assumption.

He's talking the Nikon D40 versus the Canon Rebel.

Get a digital SLR. Simple as that. The whole Canon vs Nikon thing comes entirely down to preference. They both make excellent SLR's and whichever you buy you should know it's money well spent.

The whole Canon vs Nikon vs Pentax vs Sony vs Olympus vs Fujifilm vs Film vs Digital thing comes entirely down to preference.

fix'd

If you still want movie mode, check out the Lumix FZ 8 and FZ 50.

Panasonic are bringing out a new FZ 88 or something, which means the FZ 8 will come down in price. The Leica lenses it has built in is beautiful. Having tested them against the S3, they easily come on top. Don't know much about the S5 though.

Don't get a DSLR cause people tell you to, find a camera that meets your needs. The Prosumer P&S offer decent photo quality. Medium sized Print worth too (8 x 10)

I'd go with the Canon.
But it depends on the individual needs as to the big, "what should I buy" thing.

The most important thing is getting to know your camera. To be really good, it needs to be an extension of your hand, and mind. Know your equipment, and you can do great things.

Oh, and yeah, if you're serious about photography, go DSLR route.

Pentax K100D (or K100D Super) are both in that price range... I have a K10D and am very pleased with it. I'd suggest getting the camera that has the best fit in your hand and that has the most functionality. You don't want to be stuck with something that hinders you by trying to be too user friendly.
