While a lens hood is the best way to try and prevent flare, filter quality does make a difference. I have a cheap 19.99 uv filter and a B+M and through the viewfinder they do seem the same, but once you load that picture and look at it on something bigger than the camera's LCD there is a difference.
but as far as the OP, what I would invest in is a lens hood, I wouldn't even bother with a UV filter. just be careful of how your handling the camera, and leave the lens cap on it when not in use for protection. The hood will also help in that category.
