In general, if I had enough time to spot meter, I also had enough time to fire off a test shot and then EV compensate. I've got spot metering on my 40D now and never use it. The times I have used it, it's made me fuck up because it meters perfectly on one thing and lets the other things blow out or underexpose to hell, and the shot would've been salvageable if I'd just shot with standard evaluative metering and curved the range in RAW. And then I usually forget and leave it on spot meter and it fucks up four or five subsequent shots. Your mileage, of course, may vary--other people swear by spot metering, but presumably they spend more time in manual mode than I do.
(It does have center-weighted-average metering available, though, which is close to spot)
