Can /p/ help me out here.

I was taking pics of RC cars drifting tonight in a room with not a great deal of light. My Canon Eo5 400D has auto focus but I couldnt get really crisp pics.

Is there a rule of what ISO/shutter speed/apature setting for a given situation?

Pic gives an idea, just couldnt focus in properly without it blurring up.

1. Just like there is no 'I' in 'Team', there is no five in "EOS". It stands for Electro-Optical System, not Electro-Optical Fivetem.
2. The rule of thumb you're looking for is to not use a shutter speed slower than the reciprocal of your 35mm-equiv focal length. I.e., if you're shooting with a 50mm lens on a 35mm or full frame camera, don't shoot at slower than 1/50th of a second. On your 400d, multiply the focal length by 1.6 to get the 35mm equiv.

So, with the 90mm lens you used to shoot this car, you should not be shooting any slower than 1/150th of a second handheld. You shot at 1/60th.

And you have to increase these numbers if you or your subject is moving.

So, my advice: Get a tripod, get a faster lens. You appear to have more money than sense, so it shouldn't be too difficult for you to work up the cash for Canon's 135mm f/2.8 or even the 85mm f/1.2.

Thanks for the advice.

Now take your head out of your ass.

You bought a digital SLR and a 90-300mm lens without knowing the basics of how ISO, shutter speed, and aperture interrelate. Or, in fact, how to spell (and, presumably, pronounce) "aperture."

Specifically, you bought a Canon EOS without having done enough research to know it's not "Eo5".

I'm standing by my "more money than sense" assessment.

You forgot about how he failed for not resizing his pics.

But yeah, your problem is not a focus problem, it's a shake/shutter speed problem.

I thought the 1.6 is to get FROM 35 TO digital, since the digital sensors are smaller?
i.e., a 50mm EF mount lens becomes an 80mm effective focal length on the APS-C sensors.

Also, I thought the EF-S lenses were still sold by the 35mm equiv. focal lengths, e.g. an 18-55mm EF-S lens would be an effective 27.2-88mm lens, but I could be wrong there.

Me again, I just read your post again and I see what you mean, my bad.

I have to say, with my f/1.8 50mm lens I can do 1/20 and still get a good picture, though.
I guess that's the f/1.8 part.

Yeah, it's a rule of thumb, not a rule of nature. If you're steady, you can handhold a lot slower.

Focal lenghts of these efs lenses are real not 35 mm equivalent.
