How the hell are they a family, Pskaught?

You really ought to think your concepts through a little better.
This just comes off as your usual pretentious garbage.

It looks good I'll give you that, but it's meaningless.

Hey, i like your photos... im just curious. where do you learn how to do what you do with your camera? just from messing around? or do you take classes? or what?

ive always been into photography, i bought a D80 almost two years ago. but i feel like i barely know what im doing, and i dont know how to produce what i want.. idk where to learn, because just messing around with the camera feels like im not learning enough. i feel like i dont know what to adjust and when to adjust it to produce my image.

Start reading the magazines... also pick one problem at a time and solve it. I do this and im getting (slightly) better...

>>239427

have any suggested magazines?

The most important things to control when creating a scene like this are the actors and the lighting, both which have nothing to do with the camera. Of course, you need to use the camera to get a clear picture, but pskaught's camera is just like any other. His "style" is done mostly in post-processing where he desaturates the colors, messes this the contrast and hues and levels, and whatever. Also he does a great job of capturing emotion of the actors with the exaggerated expressions.

US of A... and in california if that helps any, also
>> Anonymous
>>239434

i dont suppose pskaught would show the original photos before the processing? and since alot of digital photography has to do with processing, are there any good guides and such that i could look up on for that?

thanks for the help.
>> Anonymous
>>239436
The best way to figure out post-processing (unless you are not computer savvy like many older adults) is to play with the sliders (color, saturation, luminosity, etc) and see what effect they have on the picture. Eventually you will know which sliders you need to push or pull to make your picture the way you want it.

>>239435

well that stumps me. Im in the United States of British Kingdom.. so i dont know what youve got over there.

just try anything like an Amateur Photographer magazine. Start with the basics (ISO, Aperture, Shutter etc) and work into it. Experiment with Long and short time settings, then move on to things like panoramas and HDR.

Dont do too much HDR.

>since alot of digital photography has to do with processing, are there any good guides and such that i could look up on for that?

Nobody will give you this information, since PP techniques are easy to copy once you know how to do them, and most photographers want to make it seem like what they do takes skill.
>> Anonymous
>>239441
You don't need a magazine to know how to use your camera settings. You just need patience and practice with your camera. Even panoramas and hdr can be done fairly easily. Photography isn't a technical field anymore (although I'm no photographer so this is just what I believe). It is mainly being able to see and capture an interesting thing, moment or emotion.

>Photography isn't a technical field anymore (although I'm no photographer so this is just what I believe). It is mainly being able to see and capture an interesting thing, moment or emotion.

yeah i'm sure capturing emotion
is way more important than technical stuff
when doing product shots
which is like 90% of photography that isn't journalism
>> Anonymous
>>239449
product shots are not photography
>> Anonymous
>>239451
not a photographer.. or you have no foresight into anyone who actually has an imagination.
>> Anonymous
>>239452
>no foresight into anyone who actually has an imagination
I don't follow.

But you are right. I'm no photographer, as I mentioned earlier.
>> Anonymous
>>239451
They are, just like ad copy is "writing." But when discussing the state of current literature, you're right, you don't look at what interns at Saatchi are turning out.

Photography, like all arts, requires technical skill. Writing requires a wide vocabulary, the knowledge of how to spell that vocabulary, and a mastery of the grammar of whatever language one is writing in. Photography requires knowledge of exposure and processing, whether that's in the darkroom or Photoshop.

But none of that is what makes something great. The guy's wrong in saying it isn't technical, but he's right in saying that's not what you should be focused on. Just keep practicing and playing around in Photoshop, shoot manual, and you'll get better in the technical aspects.

The Luminous Landscape is probably the best place to read technical Photoshop stuff, though.

A quick tip I heard from someone else: if you're dodging or burning, go Layers -> New layer -> Softlight -> Fill with softlight neutral color. And then dodge and burn in those layers like that. For some reason, it turns out better.

Something I figured out on my own while playing around: in some black and white images, lightly burning the out of the focus parts of the image can give a strong, subtle boost to the appearance of the highlights and shadows there.
