Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 Anonymous
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0801/08010701sonydslra200.asp

"This new entry-level digital SLR has a ten megapixel APS size CCD (note the switch back from CMOS), Super SteadyShot (sensor-shift image stabilization), three frames per second continuous shooting, Sony's Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) and a 2.7" 230,000 pixel LCD monitor.

The A200 is set to ship in February for $700 with the 18-70 mm lens or $200 more for a dual-lens kit which adds the 75-300 mm.

This model appears to be very similar to the A100 apart from higher sensitivity, faster AF, a new Fn button and other subtle control changes."

So uh, why exactly did they release this?

If they start pricing the A100 to the Canon 350D and Nikon D40, then it makes sense I guess.

oh lawd, is this autofail for putting the 10 MP tag on the camera body?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
I'm intrigued by the switch from CMOS to CCD. All of the other sensor makers are going the other way.

I think Sony mostly released this to diffuse our normal "The Alpha line has no cameras lol" argument.

(That's right: I believe firmly that Sony's product strategy hinges on getting /p/'s approval)
>> Anonymous
Wait, is this replacing the A100 or is it selling with it?

Weird naming scheme they got going. They got the A700 up there.

But again, weird release. Still 10 MP with no Live View. Yes, I know "MORE MEGAPIXELS LOL" but you can count on Canon to drop the new XTi/400D with 12 MP and Live View this month. Then Sony is stuck with this 'outdated' new model.

THE A300 WAS WORTH RELEASING, THIS IS SHIT, YOU BETTER REPLACE THE A100 WITH IT.

I expect the A100 will stop being produced and this will come out to replace the bottom end of the Alpha series.

You and I might not care much about 12 MP and Live View. (Although I wouldn't mind Live View with sviwel screen.)

But for Canon, an entry level unit with those features = more people buying it = more money for them. And ultimately, it gives us nice lenses such as the IS versions of the 18-55 and 55-250. Sure, they're not L but for 200$? I'm not going to complain.

yeah, the A300 was a pretty decent idea, had a vertical grip and generally a decent enough of an improvement over the A100 to make it worth changing bodies over, this is an A100 with a few trinkets tacked on.

Infact with the lack of a dedicated function control wheel, this looks like a step DOWN from the A100.

You can only make a certian number of sensors per batch, once they run out you can either make a new batch which will be slightly different (there are two for the a100) or make a new model.

running out of sensors is generally what causes new models.

>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
I suspect Sony will be releasing a "35mm" format sensor camera eventually once the system matures enough, but they'll need more than old rebadged Minolta and Tamron gear to go with it. They're just pushing off the starting blocks in the long run really. It makes the most sense for them to start building up the lower end of the market before they start adding semi-pro and pro bodies. That way all the new customers can begin migrating up and will have a good, varied and solid system to use. Rushing it seems like a bad idea.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>109560
Well one of the new things (thats on this one as well) is a large mount surface for bigger (ie longer) lenses.

With some luck they will add some white long lenses, hopefully up to 500, which would let them get into the sport market much more than the 300 and w/e that zoom is do now. Ofcourse i would love a new 200HS/2.8, but that might be asking too much of them.

Other than tele, what exactly do you think they are missing out on, CZ covers their portrait ends (95/135 are both delicious), they even have smoothbokeh lenses.

No tiltshifts, but then only canon/nikon have them anyway.

Now that's a good move then. Might be a good sign then that they really are paving the way for the next round of lens updates. Bound to happen really. I can't see you being the only one champing at the bit for the next introductions.

They are getting better, but for me I feel they don't have the same breadth of options as I can get from the "Canikon" beasts. With Canon I've got a choice of four different focal length macro lenses, the same focal lengths covered by the cheapest of consumer right up to pro as well as different variations in available apertures and so on. It's great for me that I can have that kind of choice of quality, prices and specifications to dip into when I want. I partly chose Canon in the end for it's available range. I'm also thinking of exotic ones like the 1-5x macro that I've been eyeing up for a long while (got to justify getting such a specialist tool that I might not even use too much, but I'll manage to do it in my own eyes eventually I bet!) and the L lenses I like the look of that can sometimes be picked up for (relatively) good prices now.

Don't take it as a knock on your choice. I might use Canon, but I've used Nikon too a good few times and it's nice too. I can't really knock it. I'm open to the idea that they've all got something to offer to different people and in turn have their pros and cons. I chose what I felt comfortable with and had the lens line up I was happy to buy into. That's what everyone should probably do really. One way I looked at it was that even if for some bizarre reason Canon never released another lens the ones I wanted were all there and I can still build up a kit that will keep me happy. Thankfully it hasn't come to that though. ;)

If we give it ten years or more we'll probably be knee deep in Sony lenses from the near-disposable consumer end to the "L equivalent" pro end and none of this will be relevant.
>> Anonymous
>>109592I partly chose Canon in the end for it's available range.

I don't know shit but isn't Nikon using the same mount since the beginning of time? Doesn't that mean Nikon has more lenses available?
>> Anonymous
>>109614
Yes, but like Pentax, they've repeatedly fucked up the compatibility. New amateur-class bodies don't meter with old lenses, while new G-type lenses are stuck at max aperture when put on old cameras, for example.
>> Anonymous
>>109616

Thanks.

As it is, which brand has a larger lineup of fully functional lenses? Pentax?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>109614
Like the other guy said, there are compatibility issues even if the F-mount has nominal compatibility all the way back to the earliest lenses. Even within Nikon's currently shipping lineup, there are lenses that won't autofocus with some bodies but will with others. With Canon, there's the EF vs. EF-S issue, but there's actually an advantage to EF-S lenses that makes it worth losing the ability to use them on larger-than-APS-C bodies.

But I don't think Blackadder was really talking about Nikon there. I think he more meant that he went with Canon as opposed to Sony/Four-Thirds/Pentax/Etc rather than Canon as opposed to Nikon. The brands other than Canon and Nikon have a pretty good lens lineup for average photographers' needs, but they lack the more specialized niche lenses like the tilt/shifts, superteles, ultrawides, macros, etc.
>> Anonymous
>>109630
>>109630
It depends on the given camera and your definition of "fully functional".

For example, Nikon FM3A can take hundreds of Nikon AI lenses with full functionality - but that functionality includes only A and M modes with manual focusing.
Then take an adapter, put the same AI lenses, say, on an Olympus E-3, and you'll get the same A and M modes with manual focusing plus live view and even IS if you're lucky, but that's obviously only a fraction of the functions of a native lens on the same camera.
>> Anonymous
>>109631there's actually an advantage to EF-S lenses that makes it worth losing the ability to use them on larger-than-APS-C bodies.

Hmm, what advantages?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>109636
The short-back-focusing means that you can have cheap, light, reasonably sharp wides that you couldn't have if you had to accommodate the possibility of a full-frame mirror box.
>> Anonymous
>>109636

Same advantage as DX only lenses and similar efforts from everyone else. It lets you make them smaller, lighter and cheaper for the same focal length and apertures.
>> Anonymous
>>109640
>The reduced image circle means that you can have cheap, light, reasonably sharp wides

Fixed.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>109641
There's actually more advantages than with everyone else's. The rear element of an EF-S lens is actually closer to the sensor than with a Nikon or Sigma digital-only lens. That's why you can't mount an EF-S on a full-frame body.

Of course, this comes along with the sharp disadvantage that Canon won't be able to do the same sort of thing Nikon did with the D3 and make their digital lenses work with a crop on the full-frame bodies.
>> Anonymous
>>109634

What about natively compatible? Like, just within Pentax, just within Canon, etc. Which company makes the most lenses?
>> Anonymous
>>109647
Nikon, then. Pentax didn't make that many lenses, and all other manufacturers switched lens mounts at some point.
>> Anonymous
>>109648

Is Pentax the best for cross compatibility?
>> Anonymous
>>109646
The rear element of an EF-S lens isn't that much closer to the sensor to make a big difference - it's just a couple millimeters less. Even Four Thirds, which has the smallest mirror of all current SLR systems, doesn't offer much of an advantage here - anything less than 35mm is still going to have a retrofocus design.
>> Anonymous
>>109646

DX lenses don't work properly with larger (FX) format either.
>> Anonymous
>>109651

Are you saying Canon is ultimate win?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>109651
DX lenses won't project on the full frame, but you can mount and use them on full-frame cameras. On film, they vignette like nobody's business, but on the D3, the camera automatically crops it down to the APS-C sized section of the sensor in the middle.
>> Anonymous
>>109652

No, they're probably just as good. Apart from Canon being for pedophiles, that is.
>> Anonymous
>>109649
You mean compatibility between different systems?

First, there's a fuckton of adapters to put non-native glass on Four Thirds cameras (virtually all systems except FD and a few obscure ones), but you'll need those russian glue-on modchips to get focus confirmation and IS; also, 2x crop factor sucks for non-telephoto glass.
Second, you can put a slightly lesser variety of non-native glass on Pentax, but IS and focus confirmation work without any extra hax.
Finally, Canon is roughly on par with Pentax by the number of adapters available, but you again need hax for focus confirmation and there will be no IS at all.
>> Anonymous
>>109653

Do you think Canon will do something like this for the new 5D? Like make it EF-S compatible.
>> Anonymous
>>109655

Or you could save yourself the grief and buy what is in their native ranges.

>>109658

>> Anonymous
>>109659

I thought the whole point of getting Pentax and Olympus was for cross compatibility?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>109658
Possibly. I don't think they will, though, for a couple of reasons:

1. They'd have to do something like sliding the mirror out of the way instead of just slapping it up, though, which would take some doin'.
2. I think Canon would rather people bought the high-end glass for the high-end cameras. Since they've had full-frame digitals for a lot longer than Nikon, I think people are more used to the idea of planning ahead if they want to go full frame than Nikon users were.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
As for sonys range, there is still a lot of quality (fucking better than canikon) minolta glass avalible but no longer manufactured.

They have their consumer lenses done and done, everything is pretty much covered with the new lenses and with CZ+G they are making their way round the top consumer-low pro gear. but then whats the point of having the good shit glass if you dont have the pro body to go with it?

Im sure the dynax mount has as much native glass to it as nikons (canon has a silly ammount) and some of the old minolta stuff was one of a kind.

I thought the point of pentax/olympus was to be cheap because you couldnt aford a real camera OH BURN.

And Flickr is hardly representative of world camera sales. All emofags use it while all those KEKEKE ZERG RUSH tourists with random olympus and fujis don't; also, looking at statistics for particular camera models is useless since, say, company A may have 100 models selling 10000 units each and outsell company B with 10 models selling 50000 units each, even if company B occupies top places in the charts.

I'm actually referring to a later article with actual % of ALL the manufacturers... but for the life of me I can't find it.

Canon and Nikon have a LION's share of the DSLR market and NO BODY looks even close to taking any of their share. Together i think they have something like nearly 70% of that market, the rest are fought out by the rest, as i mentioned before, none of those makers have products that are likely to take Canon and Nikon customers away, so they're going to squabble amongst them selves. Sony who are third doesn't even have a double digit percentage share. Olympus are 4th i believe.

Sony's position as #2 (i honestly thought they were #1 at some point too) in the Digital Compact market is expected, being the electronic powerhouse that they are.

But their #3 position in the DSLR segment is really due to their acquisition of of Konica-Minolta which coupled with the powerhouse status would have helped them alot.

>>109880

Well it is a good point that Sony only had one camera, but like i've said, Pentax has taken over that position in Japan, and it could be possible that it's a worldwide indicator.

Though a great point is the one in regards to the other brands... Honestly at this point no one is looking to get anywhere near Nikon and Canon's share of the market. Thom Hogan wrote an interesting article where he debunked Olympus' claim that it was going to have 10% of the DSLR market in 4 years.

That claim is ridiculous when you consider it means Olympus would need to double it's share in DSLR... but since there's almost no chance of them taking Nikon or Canon's share it'd been the non Canikon brands battle it out.

I myself am happy because I iz well a Nikon fag. And them having a bigger share means more research dosh and more camera gear. If only i had the patience.
