Olympus E-3. Discuss
>> M?e?e?s?e??? !iZn5BCIpug
Enjoi your built in flash.
>> Anonymous
If I was interested in a pro camera in a system with few primes and viewfinders not really cut for manual focus (though the E-3's isn't that bad) I'd be all over it.
>> Anonymous
The E-System makes me super jealous of their 7-14 f/4
>> Anonymous
>>267735
you're jealous of that? you know it's only equivalent to a 14-28 right?
>> Grebbin !!M4ehTJKOnNf
As far as I know with limited usage of it, good on specs, but not as good when you're actually using it in the field.
>> Anonymous
I would consider it when going into relay bad environment. Honestly it`s awesomely made body, with good ergonomics and seals but shitty sensors kills it for me.

The whole point of the smaller sensor is lost when it's put in a huge ass body.
They should strive after putting the largest sensor possible in the smallest body possible, not the complete opposite.
>> Anonymous
4/3 is and always will be a failure until they make tiny bodies to go with the tiny lenses. So far there is no reason to use it over the others.

cheaper
better kit lenses
i guess you could say the aspect ratio? i like it more but its not a deciding factor

I'd like to hear some real reasons for this position. I was expecting some real difference in high ISO noise compared to other crop sensors and I didn't really see it. I mean it was slightly more noisy but nothing that I would consider a deal breaker. The difference between 1.6x and 2.0x is pretty minimal in practice.

I shoot Canon and I'm going to stick with it but every time I see this comment it makes me wonder what you're looking at.

the 12-60mm SWD lens is a fucking awesome lens

It's better than the competition, picture related.

4/3 sensors sucks, camera body and Zuiko glass is good but the sensors let it down and inferior image quality compared to Nikon or Canon. Unless Olympus fixes that and get some sensors that can really complement their body and lenses, no thanks.

>Resolution not as good as best in class (stronger AA filter?)
>Highlight dynamic range not quite as good as competitors (better than other E-Series cameras):
Some highlight clipping on bright days unless you reduce exposure
>Noisier results than most competitors above ISO 400 (usable up to ISO 1600)

>If Olympus could only find a sensor to match the quality of the camera itself and the lenses available, the E-3 would have been lifted into a class of its own. As it is, this is a camera that will keep the faithful happy, and one that offers some unique features at a good price, but one that is unlikely to see eBay suddenly flooded with high end Nikon and Canon gear as professionals and serious photo enthusiasts dump their systems and jump trains to the Four-Thirds express. Features like in-body IS and a tilting screen are all well and good, but a camera at this level needs to offer the ultimate image quality and total shooting versatility, and here the E-3 can struggle to match its direct competitors.

I'm actually looking into it. Sounds like a pretty solid photojournalism DSLR for the price. Improved viewfinder, ISO noise, and many of the features necessary for a pro-level DSLR (vertical grip compatibility, wireless flash) but without the big price tag.

>>267712
I actually like the idea of having a built-in flash available. It's better to have something available than not to just because you're afraid of not looking "Pro LOL!" I'd rather keep my options open if I don't have a flash on hand. It's also a smart way for Olympus to still appeal to the amateurs.

But that's just my point. I very rarely shoot at anything above ISO400. At those ISOs the IQ output is nearly identical across the board.

On my 40D when I shoot at ISO800 or 1600 you get noise...but noise isn't the end of an image. Noise Ninja takes care of it. As long as chroma noise isn't too bad, especially. Chroma noise is where you will ruin an image.

So my point is this: who cares? Unless you consistently shoot at high ISO...who cares? It seems like such a trivial thing for MOST photographers to worry about.

>>267864

To clarify: at ISO400 and below the IQ is nearly identical across the board. At above that the E3 lags behind.

>ultimate image quality

Why do people care about this?

I'm>>267714, I'm not interested in any of the Four-Thirds DSLRs for other reasons, but people obsessed with ULTIMATE IMAGE QUALITY get on my nerves.

-Technical image quality matters for nigh shit.
- Subjective image quality is just that, subjective. I mentioned this in another thread, after someone said something similar- Canons tend to have the lowest noise, but I personally find the noise they have more intrusive than other brands. So what has better image quality?
- Even small sensor compacts are standing up to 135, though I haven't seen or done any direct comparisons, larger sizes (DSLRs, etc.) meet or exceed 120, and anyone who's talking about "ultimate image quality" and not shooting sheet film is just finding something to wank about.

Stop worrying about the spec sheets and lab tests and just worry about the qualities of the image you're producing. Any minor differences between any DSLR's ideal technical image quality are going to be trod over by your own clutzy handling of the camera and the files, and the screwy scenes you point it at.

Oh, and anyone who disdains a pop-up flash is just being a snob. It's obviously doesn't hurt the weathersealing- someone post that pic of the E-3 being doused with water- and a flash can be useful when you don't plan on it being. It's also less obtrusive than a big Speedlight or Speedlite or Vivitar or whatever stuck on top.

Olympus is an ugly dog of a system. There is no reason to choose it when you could pick from all the others.

There's another picture of someone dumping a bucket of water on it.

Serious, honest question, how well do the 1D series, Dx series, Kx0D series, the last Olympus pro DSLR, and whatever weatherproofed models Sony have stand up to this sort of abuse?
>> tizzou !!HuouSd+PYUs
The Canon xxD may not be weathersealed, but I've taken it in a light rain / heavy mist and it's done just fine.

olympus fanboys in action, i see. i always wonder if it is subconsciously really just a desperate attempt to avoid buyer's remorse. constantly going out of your way to justify your purchase with strangers and so on.

buyer's remorse feels terrible and no one likes to admit they made a mistake, so it is better to find others like you and band together and then put your fingers in your ears and shout as loud as you can. make up whatever excuses or reasons you can grasp from others or your imagination. anything to avoid the bad feeling. it's probably partly instinctual with the pleasure/pain and reward system in the brain.

Nikon D300 was here, Olympus E-3 is a loser
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
I have to admit, the 50-200 is a cool lens. 100-400 equivalent, reasonably fast, very compact for its range and quality. The 7-14 is a cool lens. The E-3 definitely has a few things going for it.

ITT: People argue about a camera they've only seen on the internets.

I have an E-3 and shoot with it. Enjoy your Digital Rebel kits.
