Vincent
I realized today, that we have a serious lack of a gear thread on /p/ right now.
And we all know nothing generates more replies (read: hate) Than people debating the merits (or lackthere-of) Of someone elses equipment.

I shall start, so all who come after can criticize my choices and doubt my abilities as a photographer.

Dear Vincent,
I am very happy to see a D200 there in your collection. What you need to do now is get a D40 as well. Then sell everything else you have and buy the excellent Nikon 18-200VR. It's all you really need, really.
Yours, Ken Rockwell.

PS
and more seriously, seeing that you are a fellow Nikon fan, are you as excited as me about the up and coming D300? Economically stupid and painful to consider one when you already have the D200, but well that's just the way it is.

I notice a huge preference of Nikon cameras in this thread.

Last summer I decided to buy myself a camera in a moment's whim, without much prior experience in cameras/photography. I bought a photography magazine that happened to have a good review of Canon EOS 30D in it. Top marks. So it was decided - I went out and bought it. In retrospect, had it been a different issue with a review of D200 in it, I would've gotten the Nikon instead. So the fact that I shoot with Canon and consider Nikon a friendly rival is accidental at best. But why do you guys prefer Nikon? I'm very happy with my 30D and I'm looking forward to the 40D.

Gear:

Canon EOS 30D
Canon EF-S 60mm 1:2.8 USM macro
Sigma 18-50mm 1:2.8 EX
Manfrotto 055CL tripod with 141RC head.

Can't be assed to find out what the crappy Canon 18-55 kit lens is. Never should've gotten it in the first place, but I didn't know better.

I prefer Nikon over Canon primarily for the ergonomics and ease of use of their cameras. i.e. the position of the on switch on my D80, vs that on the 400D, the way my D80 sits in my hand, the simplicity yet full-featuredness (is that even a word?) of my FE. I simply found that when using cameras, the Nikons felt better.
>> Macheath !8b4g0BkNZg
I almost went the Nikon route. When I was younger, my mom bought a manual Nikon film camera but had no idea how to use it properly so she said she'd give it to me when I was older. A few years later, I asked her for it and intended to just use the lens to save money by buying a body only instead of kit, but she couldn't find it. Disgruntled, I saved up some more money and bought a RebelXT. I still wanna know where that camera is anyway. Hopefully it'll turn up someday.

So instead of a manual focus, Nikon film camera, I received a autofucusing digital Canon camera.

when i got my Pax, the shutter was sticking because the grease had turned into a wax over the years. So i pulled it all apart, cleaned it and re oiled the shutter mechanism , now works great.

With my Petri 7, there was a thin film over the lens elements (not fungus) so i had to pull them all out and clean them too, but the same film is inside the viewfinder too and makes a little hazy looking, so i gotta somehow figure out how to pull the top part off.

Carmrahs:
Nikon D40
" F100
" FE2
Canon A550(?)
" A80
Minolta X370
Konica don't know model number made in 1979

I have too many cameras.

Lenses:

One big box full of manual focus lenses. 500mm mirror lens to 16-35 wide zoom. I have way, way too many lenses.

I use the most:

1. D40, for exercises, snapshots, etc.
2. FE2, as an imitation leica. It's more or less married to my 55 micro, and always has a roll of b&w.
3. F100, for slides/serious work. Too heavy to carry around all day.

Favorite lenses:

1. 55 micro. Insanely, insanely sharp lens. The ability to focus to 1:1, in my opinion, is also a lot more useful than a ridiculous zoom range.

2. Konica hexanons. The camera is more or less junk, but these lenses are pure beauty. Sure, my 50 1.2 has noticable spherical aberration, and the other two are slow as shit but every single picture I've taken with any of these lenses has come out great.

3. 28 2.8 and 80-200 4.5-5.6. I got ripped off on the 80-200 (paid 250 for it, used), but these two lenses constitute the 95% of my photography that my 55 micro and 18-55 DX don't.

I got a job. It's pretty awesome. I highly recommend it.

Shit, my job sucks, but hey, when I decided to buy a camera, lo and behold, I had the money. Yay.
>> Jens Nordström
I have also worked for my gear, hard ernd cash :/

Quit whining. When I was in school, I had only some pocket Kodak film P&S and a Smena 8M.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

All I had was a cheap Kodak P&S *digital*. Less than one megapixel of shitty quality. Your kodak film camera could at least produce shitty 35mm negatives.

Pfft. Kids today.

(Pic, of a lawn you damn punk kids should get off, related)

Fuck you assholes. ;_;

Nikon D50
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D
Vivitar 285hv strobe

That's all, folks. I've got some film stuff, but I never shoot with it, I can't afford it and I can't get into a darkroom or set up my own. Fuck.

Pfft, you had it easy. As a teen I had to carry a box of floppy disks to feed one of these beasts.

Actually, no I didn't.

Before I had my crappy little 1MP kodak, I had to *borrow* this beastie from my parents. Also a floppy-based Mavica, but worse than yours.

(Took this picture with my Digital SLR last time I visited my parents, 'cause it amused me. INTERPOLATED MEGA PIXEL IMAGES, BABY! YEAH!)

Anyone have a tamrac camera backpack?

I'm looking to get the expedition 5 backpack - good idea?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>72868
I'd recommend against a backpack as your only camera bag. If you get one, basically say goodbye to being able to pull things out of your bag on the fly.

I've got a camera backpack which I've started using for lighting equipment (i.e., stuff that I'm going to have to take some time setting up anyway, so the time penalty of swinging it off my back and setting it up somewhere is lost in the general noise of having to set up my umbrella and light stand and lights and whatnot.

tldr: Maybe get the backpack as a secondary bag, but have a shoulder bag for your primary.
>> phesarnion
>>72868

I use a Lowepro Slingshot 200AW as my bag, it's not good for very heavy gear, because it's only got one shoulder strap, but its great for "quick-draw photography", and has an integrated waterproof cover, as well as several other nifty features.
>> ????? !wAHA/GeRU.

>>72868
I also use a Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW. My 300mm f/4 barely fits in capped, but then again it's not meant for really heavy gear. It would definitely fit in the Slingshot 300 AW, but I'm not sure I would get that for the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR that I'm planning to get.
>> phesarnion
It fits my 70-300 , although if i was using a TC on that, then maybe not. But its a great bag for my usual setup: body + lens, 2 other lenses, a hard drive, a flashgun, and a manual film body.

I can imagine problems with that Nikon Beast of a lens though

Lowepro Mini Trekker (Backpack) Will fit a D200 and an 80-200 af-s (so same size as the 70-200 VR). And it will also fit 1 other camera body, 1 Flash and up to 4 more lenses (medium to small sized lenses)

Its a sweet bag and its relatively cheap, Only sling Bag i could find big enough for a camera and the 80-200 was the Nova 5, and that BARELY fit it.
>> ????? !wAHA/GeRU.
>>72930
I have thought about the Nova 5. The largest shoulder bag I have is a Rezo 170, which is too small for my F100 w/ battery grip, and barely fits my D80 w/ battery grip. My 18-200mm VR and 70-210mm fit in attached.

For my 300mm f/4, I use a big Lowepro Toploader, in which it will fit attached to a body. Since my 300mm f/4 is just as long as the 70-200mm VR, I can use it with the toploader. Of course, that'll be only if I know that's the only lens I'll use.
>> Butterfly forgot trip
Ive got my alpha free bag, which manages to fit in all my lenses and some extra crap (like the chargers).

bumping advice for using a shoulder bag for normal shooting.

I have a Canon EXee, Canon T60 and a Canon A-1 (and a Canon Powershot A80 if P&Ss count).

I can't be bothered going to get my gear so I'm pulling it from memory.
Canon FD 50mm f/1.4
Canon FD 50mm f/1.8
Canon FD 28mm f/2.8
Canon FD Zoom w/macro 35-70mm f/3.5 (Came with camera, I don't use it anymore)
Canon FD Zoom 28-2**mm f/3.5
(Don't remember brand) 500mm f/1.8
2x Teleconverter
2x Macro Teleconverter which can focus to infinity.
Canon Speedlite 199a
(Some other flash I don't use since I got a Speedlite)
And about four other shitty lenses I don't ever plan on using.

All this I got for free from multiple sources apart from the 50mm f/1.4.

If I were going for a digital, I'd get a Nikon, funny how that works out.

A 500/3.5 mirror lens is already huge like xbox. I wonder what a 500/1.8 might look like, although that was probably a typo (most likely he meant 50/1.8 or 500/8)
