Britfags of /p/, your opinions please.

Stuck going to them when the internet fails or I need something in a hurry. Almost verything is overpriced.

A friend's boyfriend works there. He's just about the most dull man I've ever met.
>> Anonymous
I really wouldnt mind using them if they had:

* Friendly staff
* competitive prices
* a wide range of stock, far beyond my needs
* experts who can tell me in depth about photography
* a decent and fast print service
* sexy women rather than a standard "keith"
* selling pro equipment

sadly they offer none of the above.
>> Anonymous
All shops will charge a premium. These places don't have any competition so they don't bother with sales and other discounts. They are just after the casual browser and have no interest in anything else.

That said in the UK online camera retailers are pretty screwed up too. You have Pixmania or err...Amazon which err...has Pixmania as it's etailer. It's either that or just a bunch of hit and miss electronics sites that have no interest in your actual interest and just happen to stock camera stuff as it comes under the same banner as 'electronics'.

There are many, many online specialist photographic retailers in the UK.
Just pick up a copy of Digital Photographer magazine and last half of it is solid adverts. Funnily enough there's a lot of Jessops adverts crammed in there too.

Bristol Cameras, where i got my flash for 100~ off RRP. I use ebay for looking at pricing/avalibility anyway since i'm never interested in new lenses.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
Jessops sucks any time I've been in there. Shame as they used to have good and knowledgeable staff years ago. The only good staff (or the last to retire/quit) were in the developing and prints departments, the sales staff having long ago been replaced with people keen on moving units and otherwise clueless. Such a shame. If you want the old-style service you'll have to go to smaller independent retailers (and pay the premium on the price) or do the research online and hope for the best.

Bristol Cameras is pretty good. There are a few medium and small sized ones that work well too.]

I find this link useful for getting started on browsing. Sometimes Jessop's online shop can work out quite cheap compared to the competition:

What about Calumet? They've got a bunch of stores scattered around the UK. If they're anything like the ones over here, they're, by far, the best photographic retailer out there. Almost everybody on staff is either a working photographer or a serious student, and they stock everything from an entry-level D40 to $30k medium format digital, as well as a huge catalog of lighting, accessories, film and developing supplies, and anything else you could want.

I'm not a fan of Jessop's at all. In fact they're so shit.
>> Honest So You Dont Have To Be !9UISPtwBPo
Honestly?

They helped me out no end when i first started out,

Ofc, overpriced, no one buys shit from there, but what they do have is knowledge, if you happen to talk to a higher up staff member, not just the floor grunts, make sure you talk to them about there stuff, what they use... they will be thankful of the conversation and tell you the truth about what to get.. just thank them, and leave, next stop, google shopping!

But other than helping out new comers to photography, they cant do much elts, overpriced and a very small stock range,

>I see your Jessops and raise you a London Camera Exchange.

+1 on that

I used them quite a bit when i was down in Bournemouth, friendly staff, know there shit, and have no problem ordering in all sorts of shit for you, even if you just want a play around with it.

My A100 is from yodobashi camera in shinjuku. I didnt actually bother checking the price in Bic before buying it as they took my visa without a pin <3

I love LCE, it sucks i have to go to manchester to get one and they have rubbish stock. I'm always in the one in bristol (centre, not temple) even though they're tiny they stock loads.

>>256709

Tapping them for information and advice like that and then buying it from someone online is a shitty thing to do to.

"Thanks for the service but I'm giving my money to some anonymous box-shifter"

We'll see how long the good shops and employees stay with that kind of abuse going on.

You are dishonest and a piece of shit.
>> Honest So You Dont Have To Be !9UISPtwBPo
>>256719

So should all the people who ask for advice on /p/ pay the anon for the privilege???

Jessops is a big business, it wont miss a few sales to new comers who asked questions. And even if they do, they make it back soon enough from over priced shit moms buy to snap away at there kids.

And would this mean you will pay WELL over the asking price in a store due to a bit of good advice? A store that's part of a huge company i might add.

>>256730Companies are evil and don't deserve profit. People shouldn't have money. I am a communist.

Fixed your post there.

You are consciously and deliberately abusing the system or services there. You are another one of these morons that think they are owed free games and movies through piracy, aren't you?

You have the morals of a thief. Where do you think the money comes from to pay for them to stand talking to your dishonest and ungrateful scumbag self all day if idiots like you keep walking in and wasting their time and then rushing off to give someone else money?

In the future you will get NO SERVICE from warehouse box pushers and I bet little bitches like you will be the first to whine, despite people you being to blame for it.

You are scum.

its an open market and if someone wants to go off and pay less for something than that is their prerogative to do so.

The staff in Jessops know fuck all. Fuck Jessops and go online and do your research then buy your shit for cheaper.

UK based, voted best online retailer 7 years in a row, must be doing something right.

I work at Jessops, and yes, most of the staff know jack shit about photography. The bad thing with the company is that they saw it as a good thing to gobble up hundreds of small local shops and then either turn them into shells of what they used to be or shut them down.

There are about 10 Jessops shops worth buying anything from, none of them are clean.
If you go into a Jessops and ask for a Canon G9 (or any brand new SLR less than a week after it's announced) you're automatically treated like a dick. This is mainly because you are a dick and need to grow some balls so you can function correctly.

DO NOT BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. Seriously, you'll get maybe half of the cover you'll get for the same price from a photo insurance company and you'll be without your £400 SLR and kit lens for 6+ weeks whilst people loose the repairs.
Staff discount is fucking good there. Nothing like a lens at cost price minus 10%

Calumetfag here, our local Calumets are actually the stores WITHOUT those guys. They're all at Samy's...

And, man, stop making me miss Bic and Yodobashi...
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
Talking of Yodobashi, they did give me a free bag as well as drop quite a fair chunk off the price (including the tax free tourist discount).

Makes me want to make some 1/2 hearted excuse for going back just to buy my A700 there.

I never actually bought a camera there, bought a subnotebook computer, though. (Went to Japan without one on purpose 'cause I know I'd be buying one there.)

But yeah, I really want to go back. It's been eight months since the last time, but I still have that god-awful song they play all day stuck in my head. Plus the "toystore" on top, and the food court... and, of course, everything else around the big one in Akiba.

My friends over there have been trying to convince me to come to college over there, just reminiscing really makes me want to do it. Apparently they even have a job lined up for me working at Mandarake in Osaka's Nihonbashi!

>>256831
Nipponbashi, I know, I know, I wasn't really thinking about it and couldn't remember which one it was. I've never been there, and have only been in Osaka for a couple days total.

I didn't say I want to work in a weeaboo store, but they're trying to get me to go over and do it. It does apparently pay pretty well for a part-time job...

Still seems like going over there for a couple years could be cool, though. Beautiful country, too, lots of nice shit to take pics of, and being an obvious foreigner would mean being able to get away with all kinds of stuff.
>> BurtGummer !!RRMHFHglFsy
I love all the people in this thread who try to defend Jessops ("dont waste their time, their stocks not worth anything" etc)

you know what? GOOD, fuck em, if a business is being organised badly at the top and manned poorly at the bottom it has no chance of keeping up appearances.

I wish jessops WOULD fold, that way other shops like Asda, PC World and Currys would HAVE to take advantage.

Then we would have some good price battles.

Curry's are only good if you already know exactly what you want to buy.
Dear lord please don't go in there for advice... My favorite game is going in there just to wind the fuckers up for being the most clueless camera salespeople on the high street.
>> Honest So You Dont Have To Be !9UISPtwBPo
>>257282

Will have to try that some time...

I once walked in there, asked if they had a 6 to 6 firewire, he asked what one was, when i laughed he told me to get out for making stuff up.....
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH
The trick is, go into jessops - ask for the best price they'll offer you on <item>, go to currys, say "omfg jessops offered at this much, can you do better? or add something in with it?"

In the end I got like £100 worth of free stuff with the d80, including 4gb card, tripod and bag.

Reading this thread, well, its just nice to see a fair few other peeps from this green and pleasant isle posting on /p/ !

As for Osaka, rather you than me, but it certainly has its fair share of flashy young ladies (bitch of a dialect though!) Give me Sapporo, or most of Hokkaido, especially way up north (Rumoi etc) over any other bit of Japan! Don't get me wrong, I love London, its just all the other fucking Londoners that make it such a shithole ^^

If I keep complaining, maybe the wife will listen and one day we can go back to where I feel happiest ; []

Dialect's pretty cool, though. The whole group of moonlanders I hang out with are Osakan, so I've picked a bit up from them.
