Anyone in Canada:
Canon XSi with EF-S 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS and 55-250mm 4-5.6 IS is available at BestBuy for $1035 CND. [Usually runs around $1300 CND]
>> Anonymous
usual bestbuy tactics, raising price and saying AWESOME DEAL

regular price is $1149CAD

so it's $114 cheaper, still good price though
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>175558
Actually, bestbuy tactics are worse than that. Regular price is $1378 or something [wtf bestbuy?]. Regular price at other places is $1300 or so. It can be had for $1200~ish [best I've found other than this] at one place.

Hell, $1150 isn't that bad a price. at $1035 I'm happy though.
>> Anonymous
i have to say the XSi is pretty damn good looking

good curves all around and large 3.0" screen in the back, hot
>> Anonymous
>>175639
Yup, it does look like a 'baby' ##D or 5D, instead of something born out of a different hole in hell like the 400D. This is coming from a 400D owner too. : P
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
Well, I just picked up my order a couple hours ago from BB.

XSi+18-55IS+55-250IS+50/1.8.

It's nice. No photos yet since the battery's just charging, but it feels quite nice. Surprisingly light, even with the 55-250 attached. From my perspective, it's practically a P&S with the 18-55IS on. Not pocketable, but pleasantly light, particularly for its size.

The strap is a piece though. That needs replacement immediately. Guess I'll be camera bag shopping now...

I was thinking of upgrading from my really outdated Rebel xt
to this camera, but just buying the body (using the xt kit lens I already have) and maybe investing in a 17-85 mm lens. How is the 55-250 mm lens? I don't know a lot about lenses.
>> Anonymous
XSi + 17-85 = price of a 40D.

Upgrading from a Rebel to another Rebel isn't upgrading.

Good point.
>> Anonymous
>>175555

you seem to think this is a deal of some sort
>> Anonymous
>>176415
yeah i have to agree with>>176416

if your not really adding features and just getting more MEGAPIXELLLLZZZ then its not really a upgrade...more of a ...welllllll im not sure how to explain...its more like your bridging the gap between spending around $500 or just saving up more and spending $1200 that would be a real improvement...DO YOU SEE????
>> Anonymous
>>176423

body $799 + 18-55 $175 + 55-250 $275 = $1,249

he got it for 1,035, good deal
>> Anonymous
>>176425

the XSi does have more than just megapixels.

live view, larger screen, 3.5 fps, better grip, better battery, better viewfinder, 14-bit.
>> Anonymous
>>176425

unless he's seriously impeded by the XT

he could keep the same body and use that $500 for a good lens
>> Anonymous
>>176429

whats all this shit about lenses lenses lenses...jesus try some fucking flashes or a decent tripod. shit
>> Anonymous
>>176429

>>ive view, larger screen, 3.5 fps, better grip, better battery, better viewfinder, 14-bit

none of that will really make much of a difference...i still say save save save and blow a massive load on a decent body and some good flash equiptment.

>> Anonymous
>>176455
Two of those (better grip, better viewfinder and live view) do affect what is pretty much the thing that seperates good cameras from bad ones: ergonomics.

I'd never consider buying an XTi (Or D40 or...) because of the grip and the viewfinder. I haven't handled the XSi, so I can't say how much better it's gotten.
>> Anonymous
>>176457

yeah i get your point. i dont really give a fuck what you wrote as it was fairly obvious what you were implying.

its not really more than megapixels is it, as the cameras just another spit shine for the lower end market. LIVE VIEW OH SHIT>>>FUCKING LIVE VIEW>>>>OH SHIT

LIVE VIEW OH SHIT.
>> Anonymous
>>176459

you cant be fucking serious? live view is utter shit. i agree that the lower end slrs have shitty viewfinders....but live view...oh man...really.

oh and the grip isnt that important. do any of you seriously spend any amont of time shooting without a tripod?

are you trying to troll about the grip, or are you serious? we dont all go around taking shots where we have time to set up a tripod, you know. others dont want to carry a tripod when its not necessary. like a lot of shots where you can take it handheld. and stuff.

The XTi's grip has never been very obstrusive at all to me, and I have large hands.
>> Anonymous
>>176470

im not trolling about the grip. if your SERIOUSLY think that some kid should upgrade to a slightly different camera because of a slightly better grip as you think it will improve his photography more than say oh, i dont know, maybe a good flash and trigger system then your a fucking moron.

>>176472

how am i wrong? go on explain......
>> Anonymous
xsi has spot metering too!
>> Anonymous
>>176480

whats spot metering?
>> Anonymous
>>176464
>>176474

Not everyone likes using lots of flash effects. Say someone's a street photographer- they can't use flash for that (mostly, though there are people who do it well, in a variety of ways) and they can't use a tripod (usually). OTOH, how a camera handles is pretty much the most important thing for street photography.

Live view is very useful when working on a tripod. 100% view that I don't have to squat down to see? Sign me up.

And if you're going to go bitch about how looking at the image from the back is like a soccer mom with her digicam, remember: it's also like the ground glass on a view camera.
>> Anonymous
>>176474
but if the grip is better enough that it would make you want to use the camera more, thats better than a better flash system. what use is a camera if the grip is awkward to you and makes you not like using it? possibly making you use it less than you want to?

Metering tells you what exposure will have something work out to middle grey.

Matrix metering- the default on most modern cameras- employs some arcane algorithim, weighting the proper exposure for different parts of the scene to try to get one to come out right. If you know what you're doing, it's usually a bad idea to use it, because you have no knowledge of what it's exactly doing. It'll work 90% of the time, but if you know what you're doing, you'll be able to get it right 100%.

Center-weighted average makes the scene come out to an average medium grey, but it weights the average to the center. Fast, but it lets you know what it's doing.

Spotmetering- you point the camera at a spot, and it tells you what exposure will make the tone of that specific spot come out medium grey. Simple, effective.
>> Anonymous
>>176480

you seem to think this is some kinda special feature

the digital rebel XT and XTi dont have spot metering. just matrix, partial, and center weighted average

lol what shit...if the grip on your camera is putting you off photography in general your probably not interested enough to see it through as a hobby/ job...etc.

again. get. a .fucking. tripod.

the reason you all bitch about gear is that its the only part of photography you can quantify. 90% of all photos on /p/ look the same regardless of the camera used. you all do this as none of you really have a clue about photography other than pressing a button and OH LOOKS NICE.

Not everyone likes tripods.
Not all types of work are suited to tripods.

I own a Gitzo- a fucking Gitzo- and I only use it when doing landscapes I've planned in advance, some types of portraiture, and sometimes when I'm shooting a concert for someone, especially at long focal lengths.

Why? Most of the stuff I do is quick, handheld, decisive moment stuff: documentary, street, and candid portraits of my friends. I'm not going to bring my tripod into a restaurant and set it up next to the table while the waitress is getting our drinks.

Why is a tripod so important? You like working with one? 'Grats. No one is challenging that. Plenty of people do. Plenty of people don't. Henri Cartier-Bresson didn't use a tripod. He even talked about photography as just pressing a button when the "geometry met the emotion of the subject" or something like that. Was he doing it wrong?

Except this is The Frozen North [Canada].

So body = $880, 18-55IS = $250 and 55-250IS = $350. [Standard retail.]

Or, alternatively, body + 18-55IS = $1000.

lulz i was actually defending your purchase

and learn to buy stuff from the US, i'm from Canada too
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>176999
Nah, I understood. I'm just saying the relative cost differential is even higher.

I buy a hell of a lot from the US (and Hong Kong, int'l etc). A few things I won't though: LCD monitors, Cameras [Wait, is that it? Hmm...]. Those two I'm too paranoid about needing exchanges (eg. non-fixable front-focus on the XSi, dead pixels on the LCD) and so I only buy in person. So much easier to exchange when you can just drive back and not have to deal with shipping.
