so my imaging class requires I get a digital SLR with an aperture from f2.2 - 32 and a shutter speed of 1/1000 - 2 and with a (im not sure about this one) lens that starts with an E

He explained the reasoning behind these but I still hardly know what he's talking about. So I'm generally confused.

any suggestions on a camera /p/?

If your doing this for a class, I reccomend a fully manual FILM slr. This way you'll be forced to learn - it also makes understanding each variable alot easier.

Try and get one of these bodies along with a decent prime 50mm lens
Nikon FM-FE series
Olympus OM series
Pentax K1000
Canon AE-1

These are all great bodies to learn with, they're incredibly simple. If I had the choice -
I'd love to be able to mod my FM2 to have a digital back.

Then your class is aload of shite, what kinda course teaches you purely on digital? Enjoy your wasted life.

uh im a graphic design/illustration major sir
so I guess I dont need traditional
>> >>249048

I'm not OP. It just happens to be that OP gave a few simple requirements and you recommended something that doesn't fill them. Maybe shooting purely digital isn't a great way to teach photography, but that's what his particular class does, and a film camera quite probably wouldn't cut it at all.

>>249078
Yeah cause learning to develop film is such an important part of composition and shutter speeds and aperture amirite

don't get me wrong -- I started on film and I would recommend a Spotmatic or K1000 to anyone starting out with photography, no questions asked, but I recognize that not everyone wants to deal with film and prints. If you can use your SLR in full manual mode it's close enough, and the immediate preview you get with digital might actually help you learn faster.

>>249023
Your class has a very strange set of requirements. All digital SLRs will have a shutter speed outside that range (average would be 30 seconds to 1/4000s). Almost no lenses have a maximum aperture of f/2.2. Do you mean f/2 or 2.8 or what?

My recommendation is a used canon EOS xxD series (10, 20 or 30D depending on your price range) and a Sigma 30mm f/1.4. If you want to save some money then get the Canon 50mm 1.8 instead.

I don't understand the "lens starts with an E" part.

do you moan that they don't use typewriters at school and only use computers? nerr digital is shit nerrrrrr i'm off to waste my life on a dying format nerrr

sorry im retarded

its actually f/2.8 - f/22
fully manual control with ISO

and im thinking he said EOS so apparently that's not the lens?

Then, that's the Canon EOS (Electro-Optical System)
What's you're budget on this?
And are you planing to stick with photography as a hobby, or just use it for class?

LOL WUT? The motherfucker is forcing you to get a Canon?
>> lehesai

Apparently, the motherfucker is forcing them to get a Canon, because of it's ease of use.
Even a child could use a Canon right out of the box. With other manufacturers, you just HAVE to read the manual :))

Oh wow, welcome to corporate America/EU.

Canon is in cahoots, just like Apple is, with every major school system with a design course.

How do you think they sell 5 times more cameras than the others?
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
I was imagining "that starts with an E" to mean that the teacher was making you get Canon. Most probably because he's got a lot of Canon gear that he would share with the class or he's a Canonfag.

What reason did he tell you for going Canon?
>> Anonymous
I'm going to presume you are a poorfag, so what I'd suggest is a Pentax K200D, which is pretty good for the price, if you find a K10D for the same or less then go for that. Don't get a lens, go to pawn and op-shops and look for a SMC Pentax-A 50mm 1.7. They are great and cheap, I found one the other day for $15, but expect to pay more. Make sure it doesn't have any scratches on it or mould. Thats my two cents anyway.

will someone please post the Butterfly, "Its for the Pro's" pic?
>> Anonymous

>K10D + 50mm 1.4 prime

Agreed.
The K10D is about $550 used (including the kit lens), and the 50mm lens costs about $200, which brings the total package to around $750.

Normally I'd suggest "SILVER REBEL LOL" but the K10D is a better deal right now, especially for someone who clearly doesn't know shit about photography.

I'd like to hear that. Please ask the teacher if he didn't give a reason yet.

While we're on this, my manual was in Japanese and got left behind in the first hotel i was staying at. Never read it, have no problems using the camera even though its only in Japanese.

but as requested, and i saw some kid today with one of these.

I think the teacher is warning you to get an EF mount (for digital cameras) rather than FD mount (for film cameras) for Canon bodies.

Yeah, I can imagine an alcoholic part-time teacher who spends most of his time trolling on /p/ about borkeh and writing most of the "shit sux" comments

they would have no motive. FD is by far better for the money, heck even FL mount is cheaper.
>> OP again Anonymous
well thanks everyone but my dad (who dabbles very lightly in photography) went and got me an
evolt 420

and i believe he was just saying that because he had one (around his neck at the time with uh 1/8000 shutter speed o something)

thank you /p/

Could we really stop this "GET A FIFTY, GET A FIFTY" bullshit? They're cheap, but on crop bodies they're not general-purpose lenses.

I agree. 50s are only win on full frame, and even then I'd much rather have a 35 or 28.
