(This isn't a RAGE IS OVER NINE THOUSAND thing, just a social commentary.)

You know what really grinds my gears?

These guys running around with a Rebel XTi with the battery grip.

There's a pretty large number of people buying D40s and XTis but that's fine, I've got no problem with that.

But it bothers me when they add on that horrible battery grip. It's like, what the hell man?

Do you really take that many pictures for your Flickr or deviantART that you need 2 batteries? Do you really need the vertical buttons? Specially when all you probably have is the 50mm. I mean, come on!

And that people is what grinds my gears.

I have a D300 with battery grip, by the way. So maybe I'm just being selfish.

What a smart move this was for Canon.

Make a grip, sell it for $150 and people will buy it just because it's more "pro".

(Yes, I'm aware of knockoff versions but it's the same result.)
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
>>158525
Got mine for $80 with two batteries (knockoff), which last me about a week and a half without a recharge. Pretty convenient, if you ask me. It gives the camera a more balanced feel, plus makes me look cooler.
>> Anonymous
>>158525
It's an ergonomic thing. Some people love them, some people hate them. I'm in the latter category, but there's no reason to begrudge someone for liking the camera better with it.

Is the grip so bad that you need to buy a $150 addon to make it good?

The guy in this specific example is a moron, yes, but if you think that it's stupid to put good glass on a low-end body, you're just as much of a moron.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>158549

I have to agree with ac here. That example was a bad one, but for the more sensible people who are working slowly towards that set up it would be more foolish to spend money on upgrading the bodies all the time before you had good glass. Better to get the camera and then upgrade your lens collection. The sensor in the 400D is perfectly good for putting quality lenses on it.

I have xboxhueg hands and I need to grip to actually be able to hold the camera vertically. If I stick a hotshoe flash on there, it very heavy. Forget putting some heavy glass + hotshoe.

Fair enough, buy good glass to put on your low end body. That is a good idea. No problems with that.

But, you clearly didnt see the point i was making, or maybe you did, but didnt care.

Salesman puts a 400d in his hand and runs his sales pitch. ( we all know how salesmen push 400d )

ok done. sold.
and your going to need a lens to go with that right, as we know the kit lens is not awesome.

Did, but didn't care. You'll note the first few words of my reply:

So I think we're all agreeing that buying whatever the salesman tells you to is stupid. But your implicit assumption that it's dumb to buy good accessories and attach them to a low-end body is also dumb.

As someone who used to snark at the battery grips, I know where you're coming from.

Then, when shooting with a 70-200 F/2.8 with a 580EX on a 5D for the third week of excessive shooting I started to get shooting pains in my wrist when I shot in portrait. That's when I decided that maybe this grip thing wasn't a bad idea.

Yeah, it's way overpriced, it makes your rig a lot harder to stuff in a standard case, it's heavy, it makes it harder to rest your camera flat on a table, and I don't like it for tripod shooting, but when I'm shooting with the 24-70 2.8 or heavier and I'm going to hand-hold at length, I swallow my snark and save my fucking wrists. It does seem to steady my camera too.

I'll agree that it should be the last thing you get for your standard shooting setup, but it has a use. That being said, the douche with the kit lens and the XT with battery grip, not so much.
>> Anonymous
Hey, fuck you guys. I work in a camera store and I always make sure I give the customer what he needs.

You can go to hell. You're the people who make my job hard.
>> Warren !WSxruxpIJs
OP are you serious? Are your hands tiny? Because if they're even remotely normal in size, you would find the XTi too small to comfortably use without the battery grip. For the money, the XTi is a hell of a good camera. Hell, I use it to shoot for publication when my editor wants digital. So it's a tiny little body and isn't exactly feature-rich. The vertical grip offsets the size thing for me and lets me shoot verticals like I'm used to doing with my Nikon film gear.

So, what, functionality is bad?

batterygrips. lol.

they make any camera look pro.
thats why 85% of people buy them.

i did a shoot with a young girl about a month ago.

I did some very basic post processing, let her and her mum see a few pics and make some selections. i said i could do more advanced post processing if they desired.

she picked 6 images, and said she wanted them all black and white, but with blue eyes.

i just about cryed

torn between ZOMG INSTA-ART and giving a paying customer what she wanted.

PS: the best grip i have ever seen was a purple dildo. i shit you not. honest to god.

So, i ask the guy wtf is that about?

he said, people see a purple floppy rubber cock screwed to the tripod mount, and laugh or smile.

makes for a nice natural smile/laugh and does not look like its forced

There was a whole issue of either Rangefinder or After Capture, I forget which, devoted to this. Apparently it's all the rage with people who aren't photographers nowadays. That and HDR.

This is roughtly what it looked like
the bit in the middle of the dildo is the screw to screw it to the tripod socket.

the other lines is the mod i suggested - run a little plug to the external shutter release - to the top of the dick for a vertical shutter release

I figured it was kinda like one of these. Except screwed straight in, instead of on a bayonet mount, and a dildo, not a lens.

And that he could hold it, reverse fapping style, as a grip.
