Hey, I currently use a rebel xt with a ultrasonic 28-105 zoom lens.

However, although I do need a good camera for classes and work, I also find that due to it's bulk and weight I find myself leaving it at home.

Does anyone have any opinions on whether or not the Canon PowerShot G9 would be an acceptable camera for me to sell this one for and buy?

Or would the drop in quality be too great?

You can expect a ~quadruple increase of noise at high ISO's. E.g. the G9 will produce the same amount of noise at ISO 400 as your Rebel XT produces at ISO 1600.

Other than that, a G9 is fine too.

I think a better idea would be to get a cheap, small camera *in addition to* your XT rather than instead of. Any camera in the PowerShot line will give you roughly equivalent quality, so you'd be better off buying something cheaper than the top-of-the-line G9 and keeping your XT around for the heavy lifting.

also, does anyone know how much I should sell my rebel xt with a 1 gb memory card and the ultrasonic 28-105 zoom lens to a friend for?

It's in very good shape, but I don't know what price I should ask...

Depends on the condition of the lens and body, I'd first start at half the retail price considering it's a friend. Unless of course you need some extra cash for your purchase of the new camera you're going to get. Then just charge him/her the amount of the new camera you're going to get. ;)

The Gx series is pretty good all around. I know that the G6 has been popular, but I'm not too familiar with the G9. (I don't go shopping around for cameras all the time.) If size is really a problem, then I'd go for a SD1000 unless in you're in euroland, then I think they have a different name for that line.
