Hay thar guys the season being winter and everything the light is a bit limited. What speed would you say is still doable by hand? I do have a tripod but I feel it's a pain in the arse to take everywhere plus it's a bit too obtrusive for the kind of photos I'd like to start taking (street photography). I wouldn't want to start flashing around much either since it gives you away instantly breaking the candid nature of street photos.

Rule of thumb: minimum shutter speed required to eliminate most hand shake is 1/Xs, where X = the focal length of your lens. So, for a standard 50mm prime, 1/50s. For a wider lens like a 35mm, 1/30s. For a long lens like a 200mm, 1/200s. VR and IS can cut down on this, but that's the rule of thumb.

Fix'd. Gotta mind that crop factor.

But also keep in mind that this is just a rule of thumb, so it's perfectly possible to get shots at slower speeds if you have good technique. And if possible, put your camera in rapid fire mode and fire off a burst of three for a better chance of getting a clear one.

Got it. Think I'll do some testing rolls starting with the rule of thumb and working my way towards slower speeds. Cheers.

Keep your arms at your sides. Exhale, hit button, inhale. Don't hold your breath or tense up. Lean against something stable.

I do this but people go "lol, spray and pray" but fuck it, I have the spare batteries and memory card for it so I'll take my chances.

There's no shame in getting the right shot. Take a look through the contact sheets of really amazing photojournalists. There's lots of doubles, triples, and even longer series of shots of a single subject or scene. If they've found their composition, their moment, it's not a terrible idea to motordrive it a little in order to get a variety of frames. They still work the scene, but they go through a prodigious amount of film in the process. With digital, it's even easier.

What if you're handholding a 500mm prime?

Will the 1/500 shot be blurry?

QFT!! I use this technique all the time and often get 2 blurry shots and 1 clear one.
When I'm afraid of losing a shot .. I tend to not go below 1/50s on 18mm on 1.6 cropped cam.

I noticed OP photo looked a lot like one of the first photos I've ever taken.

Pics or it didn't happen.

Also, were you braced against something, or kneeling, or lying on your stomach or something?

Also, not all of us have in-body IS.

Well yeah, but that's a 0.00mm. You could handhold for an infinite amount of time at 0.00mm.

The real question is why you needed such a long exposure when shooting at f/0.0

You obviously have lower standards for sharpness than most.
