I would like to take a photography course. Obviously I will need a camera. I've been looking at the Sony A200

http://dslr.sony.com.au/SonyAlpha/range_camera_a200.htm

would this be appropriate for me?
>> ken rockwell
get a camera and take some pictures before you decide that you'd like to take a photography course

yeah I have a Sony Videa camera I've been using to take photos, I'm very much into photography, but haven't done any learning which I'd really like to, and the camera doesn't take decent stills.

Long answer: probably

sonys are reasonably nice dslrs, but id focus on what sort of lenses you need/want and pick which ever brand suits what you want to do, although you could get the a200 and see if its what you like doing whilst just sticking to the kit lens/s

i just bought a minolta 100 2.8 MACRO
$280 usd
deal or no? minty condition

is right

if you were to just buy a sony a200 with a walk around lens, it would be a great camera.

However, as soon as you want to do flash, off camera flash, multi speedlite setups, strobes, and get any other lens than what came with the sony, it becomes fail quickly.

everyone says the sony a200 is a bad camera.
its just that its used by alot of beginner photographers, and theyve got no clue what the hell they're doing so they give it a bad name.
ive been doing photography for quite some time, and i own an a200 for messing around, solid camera. buy sigma lenses for it though, the sony ones are only so-so.

but yeah, get the a200.

Don't do it. Don't committ yourself to a system that still has leaps and bounds to go.

On this note... How's the 50mm 1.7 as far as sharpness and ability to focus?
>> SAGE
>>268632
on minolta 50mm in order of sharpest to not.
1 50 3.5 macro ---->slow but amazing resolution and bokeh
2 50 2.8 macro
3 50 1.4 -nice stopped down at 5.6 its very good
4 50 1.7 dead last. even at f8 its not as sharp as the 3.5 wide open

Sorry, I meant the camera systems. The zeiss and KM lens collections are great... expensive in the former case but great never the less.

I'm just saying they're are more proven systems out there.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>268635
but i'll concede that
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>268635
but i'll concede that the fact that they've managed to be #3 inthe DSLR market in under 2 years is impressive. Though only in the long run will we be able to tell if that can be contributed to Sony's deep pockets.

KM marketing was truly the worst. truly they had some good engineering but just could not sell anything, i think the whole companies history is just barely scraping by. even thier FILM didnt sell.
