hey /p/,

I'm going abroad in a few months for school [Paris], and I figure i might as well upgrade from my point and shoot to a real camera [Nikon D40].

What sort of lenses do you recommend for architectural and other stuff i might take pictures of in Paris. It'll be my first time off the continent, so i dont know what to expect

>real camera [Nikon D40]

uh oh.

I'd say Sigma 10-20mm, something with a low aperture, and a decent zoom, 70-300VR maybe.

But with that D40 prepare for a lot of Manual focussing, or save for a D80.
>> Anonymous
manual focusing as in just turning the lens thing?

i dont think thatll be too much work
>> Anonymous
>>291487
It's not. It's actually better than autofocusing. But the D40's viewfinder sucks for it.

We need your budget before we take this any further.
>> Anonymous
max 700-750 USD, but id like to keep it as low as possible
>> Anonymous
I can buy a new car every 3 months and I would still buy a Nikon D80 because it's the best camera ever made.

shit works fine :D. now i just need to find a split prism screen for it in this godforsaken country and mebbe a magnifying eyepiece.

OP, i'd go for a wide and a zoom like>>291485suggested. im a poorfag so i try not to look at many lenses too much cuz they make me sad :(
>> Anonymous
D80 with the D40 kit lens (18-55mm II, great for architecture) and maybe a 1.8 50mm for low light shooting or the 55-200 (VR) if you think you need longer range more than low light.

>>291802shit works fine :D

You realize of course you've focused on her hair instead of her eyes?

Yeah, it sure works fine.
>> else !L6xabslN96

i could take a photo with it. it fits the mount so it works, everything else is just up to you to compensate for in whatever way(split prism focus screen, squint, etc...)

bsides, that was the first photo with that lens and just a snapshot. i didnt care to make a good photo of it, just wanted to marvel at the shallow dof.

tl;dr w/e shit works fine.

after a bit of consideration, im deciding that my aforementioned budget of 750 is a bit too much. I COULD spend that much, but i dont think itll be wise to

could you guys elaborate on the cons of a d40? I cant tell besides the obviously lower MP count
>> Anonymous
also, how about the d60? I dont see why we have to go to the two extremes.

how will the 6.1 MP of the D40 hold in a few years?
>> Anonymous
>>291892
unless the sizing standard for paper changes, not much.
>> Anonymous
>>291894
This man speaks the truth. If you're "just" upgrading, a six or 8 MP camera should do you well. I took a Rebel XT (8MP) to Helsinki and had a really great time. And yes, two lenses were all I needed to cover most of the situations I was in (18-200mm and a 10-20mm for really wide shots on the cropped sensor). And the majority of shots were taken just with the 18-200mm lens, so you might not even need more than one (maybe as backup, for some reason).

And since you're traveling, its a good deal to travel light and cheaply. There are plenty of good cameras out there now, IMO the market is getting pretty crowded and "older" models from even a year ago are still very good choices while their prices should be dropping as sheep go for pricier cameras.

Take the money you save from buying new and invest in a good lens and a good flash.

i fucking LOLd

not at the Ken Rockwell 18-200 but at how you went to say yeah i did well in most situations with ONLY 2 lenses :D and one is a 18-200

does anyone actually take >2 different lenses when walking around as a tourist? seriously, how can u spend time to change the lens for EVERY situation? seems like a lot of effort, just use one wide angle for walking around and zoom for far-off objects.
>> Anonymous
>>292243

so would a 18-55 and 55-200 be fine?

>>292243
I actually carry around 4 lenses as a tourist, but I don't change them for every situation, I stick a lens on and shoot according to the lens, not the other way round, and when I'm bored with the one currently on I change, only in some specific situations when I want to capture a scene I just cannot get with the current lens I change as well those are rare occasions though.

>>292243does anyone actually take >2 different lenses when walking around as a tourist? seriously, how can u spend time to change the lens for EVERY situation?

the point was he said LOL I CAN DO EVERYTHING 2 LENSES, oh and one happens to be a super fucking zoom

I carry 2 lenses, a 10-22 and a 24-105 - Gets shit done.

ah, but what about perspective distortion? you can't get the same effect by moving around, you have to have the correct focal length.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perspective_distortion_(photography)#Wide-angle_perspective_distortion
>> Anonymous
>>292606
If you are concerned with the pixel difference between 23mm and 24mm, then you have bigger problems.

Might as well go home and kill yourself if you are agonizing over shit that can be corrected in photoshop.

Besides, if you use a 17-40 f/4L or a 16-35 f/2.8L at the perfect 23mm, both will have enough edge distortion to make the 24 f/1.4L, 24-70 f/2.8L, 24-105 f/4L or 24 f/3.5 T/S perspective distortion negligible.
>> Anonymous
>>292606
1) The difference in perspective distortion between 22 and 23 or 24 and 23 mm is pretty much negligible.
2) A slightly cropped 22 mm shot will produce the exact same perspective distortions as an uncropped 23 mm shot, it'll just have slightly less pixulz.

OP here

can i have some lens recommendations?
>> else !L6xabslN96
>>293091
the 18-135mm AF-S seems the most versatile zoom lens in terms of its range. the only drawback is that it won't work for full frame tho.

then shop for a decent prime lens. get the new 50mm 1.4 if you can. otherwise learn to manual focus with the cheaper 50mm 1.8 - which won't be too difficult for architectural shots.
>> Anonymous
If you upgrading to a dslr for the first time, then you'll prolly want a nice broad range with your lenses. D40 is getting old, go for a d60 (about the same cost) or save up for a d80.

As far as lenses go, get the D40/D60 kit lens (18-55 VR) and a 55 - 200 VR, then browse around at garage sales and shit like that and look for older primes. I got a 135mm f/2.6 for free. Only hitch is I gotta use my camera in full manual.

Costco has actually got a good deal (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11318654&search=d60&Mo=1&cm_re=1_en-_-

>> Anonymous
in addition, a review that that you can only use the viewfinder to frame pics instead of the monitor on the D60. was that a problem for anyone?
>> Anonymous
the D60 doesn't have Live View either so i don't know what you're talking about
