Hay /p/, just got a bunch of new gear and wanted to brag about it. Specifically:
EOS 40D
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS
Tamron 1.4x AF teleconverter
Domke F-2 camera bag

I'm still getting used to the 40D. Its controls are very different from my old XTi, and not just in that the XTi's control wheel has a bit of shrimp sauce still stuck in it. The double control wheels force my brain to work in two dimensions at once a lot more. Honestly, I think a better layout would be for Canon to do dual control wheels like Nikon does and have a four-way controller like the Rebel series--it's easier for brains to associate ISO with 'Up' than with 'The first button in the row on the top, when you use the forward control wheel'. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually, but there is a definite muscle-memory learning curve.

The 70-300 is *fucking win*. It's so big that, even though I see exactly how massive my penis is every day, even I think I might be overcompensating for something. The IS kicks on like ZOMFG INVISIBLE TRIPOD when you half-press the shutter button, and I'm sure it drains battery like a motherfucker given that you can feel and audibly hear the gyroscopes a-spinnin'.

It's a good thing I decided to go ahead and get the Domke at the same time as all of this stuff. The 70-300 fits nicely in the Domke. Doesn't fit in my old Lowepro Nova 5AW.

(The F-2 is fuckin' win. I swear that thing uses tardis technology)

Combined with the 1.4x teleconverter and the 1.6x factor from my Canon all by itself, I now have a combined reach of 672mm (though, granted, at f/8). And the combo cost me less than a dollar per 35mm-equivalent millimeter, so that's nice. I don't actually have a good example shot from it yet, since I've mostly used it to take pictures through my cubicle window of the people below (i.e., through grimy tinted office glass), but here's some loli. The father there (brother? Both?) looks like the sort of guy who'd knife me if he saw me taking a picture of him, so having the new stalker lens was nice. Not what I'd ideally like to be using for street-photography type shots since things look a lot better closer with a wide-normal angle, but it's nice when I want to lurk in the shadows like a creepy perv. Or just want to get an overall crowd shot with a compressed perspective to make it look crowdier.

Focusing with the 1.4x on is a little iffier than focusing without. I think the extra little bit of length confuses and annoys the AF sensors. It still works, it just has to wiggle around looking for the right spot a lot more than it does with the lens alone. Given the f/8 max, not something I'll be using a lot in low light, but should be a nice combo for taking pictures of the moon when I'm in the mood for such things.

Took this with the 40D's Live View. So for the people who are all "Pshaw, there's no reason at all to have live view on an SLR, and anyone who thinks there is is a faggot", I managed to find a perfect use for it on the *first day* I took it out.

(I doubted that the purveyor of perfectly legal supplies intended ONLY for use with tobacco and other legal herbs would have been too keen on me taking a picture of their booth, so while my girlfriend was drooling over the pretties I quietly popped my camera into live mode (with the stealth shutter turned on) and snapped this pic of the lower shelves. To get it with the viewfinder, I'd have had to have laid down in the aisle, and I wouldn't have had the stealth shutter as an option. So there you go.)

Focusing in Live View is done by hitting the AF-ON button (assuming you've set the CFN to turn that on at all. Not sure why Canon leaves it off by default) which flips up the mirror and flips it back down when you let off the button (regardless of whether or not it's locked focus). Stupidly, this click isn't stealthed like the actual shutter firing. You can also, obviously, focus manually.

Live view's certainly no substitute for a real glass viewfinder, though. And the 40Ds is significantly bigger than the XTi's--I plopped 18-55s on both of 'em and looked through them with alternate eyes and there was a big difference. However, I honestly don't know that I'd have noticed without having done that. I've rambled before about how bigger viewfinder = better, but I honestly do think the XTi's is big enough. Haven't done any lower-light comparisons to see how much the pentaprism vs pentamirror light transmission helps, though. And having ISO in the viewfinder display on the 40D is a thing of beauty and a joy forever.

So how've I been since deciding /p/ could go fuck itself in every orifice? I've lost 7 pounds and totally made out with a hot redhead, and I'm not even fucking kidding about either of those. Not to mention that I just have way more fucking time to do things without being all "OH NOES! SOMEONE ON THE INTERNETS IS *WRONG*!!!" all the time. I highly recommend it. I'll be doing it again once this thread drops off page 10.

Comments about the pictures appreciated. Questions about my gear happily answered. Trolls happily tolerated so I'll remember to actually bugger off again when this thread is over rather than being tempted to start following /p/ again.

How are the pads on the Domke? I've been thinking of plopping cash for one but read somewhere that the cushions aren't that good for cameras (compared to the ones from other bags like Lowepro).
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
     File :-(, x)
>>189266
The way the Domke is set up is it has a main, unpadded chamber and there's like a little padded four-hole insert that goes into it and a stiff padded removable base thingy on the bottom. The outer pockets are completely unpadded other than what you get from the thin layer of canvas itself.

So, basically you lose out on side padding on two sides of the big not-the-insert chamber. The insert is just as padded as any other camera bag, and the unpadded sections still have the padding on the chamber side and the padding on the back (i.e., your hip. More so depending on how close to my Stay-Puft-like form you are, less so if you lean more towards Olsenesque). I think it's enough, but you'll have to judge your level of paranoia on your own. I tend to play a little on the fast-and-loose side with my gear, but I've never had a side-impact worth noting to my camera bag, so the loss of side padding isn't really a big deal to me.

tl;dr: If you think you need more padding than the domke, you're a fuckin' pussy who doesn't deserve an SLR. ;)

/p/ seems to think the girlfriend is harpoons-worthy, but I think they just have an absurd standard for beauty. The redhead is batshit insane, as indeed most redheads in my experience have been. Neither of them are furries to the best of my knowledge.

>>189394
Yeah, I'm slowly getting better at it. I was shooting in low light today, so a lot of fiddlin' with the ISO. I'm sure it'll be second nature after I've had it a couple weeks, but I still think that harnessing the spatial-relationships bits of human brains would make their stuff a lot more ergonomic. Another thing I miss from my XTi: The big beautiful 2.5" status display LCD on the back that automatically turns off when you put your eye to the viewfinder. You can get the status view with the 40D, but it goes away after you've do anything other than just shooting, and it's bright and distracting in your eye if you leave it on because it doesn't have a proximity sensor. I'm sure I'll get used to the little top LCD--everyone else seems to regard that as a feature rather than a bug, after all--but I'm not sure I'll ever end up *preferring* it.

(Pic unrelated. Is the Redhead. Is preeeeeeetty)

(Sorry, I'm still at that phase in a new relationship where I go around grinning like a madman and speaking in lolspeak)

>>189715
I really like having the joystick AF-point control, though. That was one of the big selling points of the 40D for me, in fact--at wide apertures, focus-and-reframe gave me a lot of blurry shots since reframing moved it out of the extremely narrow DoF I had. Now I can zip immediately to the AF point I want.

Not really sure. It looks like a small duffel bag. Doesn't have like a big Canon logo on it or a picture of a camera or anything like that. I don't know how this-is-a-camera-bag-savvy criminals are.

I could post one of my pics with it at 100% crop if you wanted. Its not a real comparison though, I just think it looked really soft

You've got to be reasonable and fair with comparisons. Otherwise you can spend all day comparing every piece of gear to something that costs five, six or seven figures instead. A long zoom set up is always going to be soft compared to a large and high quality fixed focal length telephoto lens (otherwise people wouldn't buy them) and all the more so in this situation with the teleconverter added. You've got to keep in mind what the context of it is. Otherwise you're back to suggesting beginners buy the Hasselblad and nothing else.

It's not bad at all as zooms go. I've seen much worse and I've looked at a lot of combinations of different brands of teleconverters and lenses. To see a (good) consumer zoom turn out results like that at the long end is very impressive in my eyes. Canon don't even officially make a teleconverter for it. Plus, he's still got IS in that lens with it. Very useful.

The lens with the teleconverter becomes a handy and very light set-up for when he wants a little more reach. When he doesn't need 400 and can make up the distance with his feet then he can take it off and shoot at 300 instead to get the most out of it. Sounds good to me.

Was that shot hand held, ac?

EF 300mm f/4L IS USM: $1200
Canon 1.4x: $290
Total: $1490
Weight: 1190g

EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM: $550
Tamron 1.4x: $109

I'll take a little softness at 100% and an aperture hit in exchange for $849 still in my pocket, greater zoom flexibility, and much, much lower weight. It's all about the tradeoffs you're willing to make.

>>192486
>Was that shot hand held, ac?
Yep. Didn't even brace against anything. IS and AF still work through the converter, although AF is a little bit iffy sometimes (it had to search its range about three times before locking on for this shot).

(Or, said another way:
How well does the 300/4 perform at 70mm? How well does the 300/4 with TC perform sitting at home because it's too goddamn heavy to have with me at all times? And how well does it perform at taking pictures of St. Louis from New York, since buying it would eat up my vacation budget for the quarter?)
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>192494
Lol not every lens is perfect for everyone. You don't need to go into detail and list all the reasons.
I just can't imagine using a 420mm f8 for anything. I had enough troubles with the 50-500 at F6.3. Actually, I rarely slap the TC on my 300mm anymore, F5.6 even feels too slow, and AF isn't quite as fast or accurate. For birds a missed shot isn't better than a slight crop.

Also, does it AF at full zoom?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>192516
Yeah, it's certainly not something I'll be using all the time--if nothing else, it's a hassle to go through the whole remove-lens-add-TC-add-lens rigamarole, always being paranoid to keep dust off any of the lenses or cameras involved. But it'll be nice for things like taking pictures of Canada from the US side of the river, taking picture of the other side of the gorge, taking pictures of boats out on the lake, shots of the moon, etc. Also, the standard pervy shots of hot chicks on the beach from like a mile away.

AF worked, kinda. Like I said, it hunted a bit before it finally managed to find the focus. So yeah, it'd be teh suck for shooting something like birds in flight, but not bad for things like boats on the horizon or random chicks sitting on the opposite shore.

Went out yesterday and did a comparison test. Results suggest the chance that my $109 wasn't very usefully spent, sadly (though this is far from a definitive, scientific test).

Basically, took two pictures, one with the 1.4x, one without, with the same camera settings. Then I blowed up the non-1.4x shot by 1.4x and cropped to actual-if-possibly-interpolated pixels on both of them.

That's right--I said 'blowed'.

Anyway, here's the crop from the 1.4x shot. They were both at ISO100, 1/320th, f/8, although this shot's EXIF says f/5.6 because the TC just passes through the aperture from the lens rather than reporting lens aperture * sqrt(2).

>a. What's perspective/compression?
How close things in the foreground look to things in the background
>b. Is it dependent on focal length?
Not exactly. It's dependent on camera to subject distance.
>c. I've heard it's dependent on focal length
It's not. Focal length changes apparent subject size, but not perspective
>d. Then why does the perspective on a wide angle look different from a telephoto?
Because when you shoot with a telephoto, you move away from the subject, and when you shoot with a wide, you move closer to the subject
>e. I don't believe you
You don't have to! If you have a zoom lens, you can test it yourself! Using the 18-55 kit lens standard on most DSLRs, for instance, emulating a 2x sensor crop factor is easy:
1. Put the camera on a tripod
2. Take a picture at 18mm
3. Without moving anything but the zoom knob, take the picture at 36mm
4. Open up the shot taken at 18mm and take a 2x crop (i.e., half size. Any good image editor should be able to do this)
5. Compare perspective to the 36mm-shot. It'll look the same (although the 18mm will be lower resolution, because you cropped it)
>f. I still don't believe you. I've always been told that smaller focal lengths give weird perspective
That's a useful rule of thumb, yes, but it's not actually true. As another example, Point & shoot digital cameras have very large crop factors and very short actual focal lengths. By this logic, a Canon PowerShot G9 (with 7.4-44.4mm zoom lens) would only be capable of super-mega-ultrawide to slightly-wide perspectives.
>g. But how could a 50mm lens have different perspective when it's on a crop camera as it does on a full-frame camera? It's still the same lens!
Because focal length doesn't affect perspective. When you put the 50 on the crop sensor, to get the same picture, you take a few steps backwards to accomodate the crop factor.
>h. I still don't get it
Then you're hopeless.
