Can you help me, /p/?
I'm thinking of buying my first camera. My budget is at about 300-450 euro and I'm looking for a good bridge.

So far I've considered
- Sony H9
- Panasonic Lumix FZ8

Also, which would you think does the job better, Karl-Zeiss or Leica?

1. I own the FZ8 and love it. Get it, so long as you're willing to process the raw files. The JPEG processing the camera does is terrible, but it gives better results than any point-and-shoot I've seen for five minutes in Camera Raw.

2. I'd say Leica, but the whole Zeiss-versus-Leica debate is entirely a matter of taste.

3. I don't know about Zeiss and Sony, but I was pleasantly shocked to find out the same Leica Solms folks who design the Summiluxariticrons actually do design the lenses for Panasonic, and that it's not just a trademark-for-cash deal. Zeiss may or may not be, I don't know.

IMO, it's honestly worse.

You have a little bit more zoom range, but the lens (while still good) probably isn't as good of quality and you'll have more noise. For the same size sensor, adding megapixels increases the amount of detail it'll pick up, but it adds noise. The FZ8 already picks up loads of detail and already has a noise problem- like any camera this size is going to.

ok, gotta remember that

Anyone here who has the Sony H9? I'd like to hear about that too, although I hear the noise reductor fucks up the image at high ISO

>For the same size sensor OF THE SAME GENERATION, adding megapixels increases the amount of detail it'll pick up, but it adds noise.
Fix'd.

Keep in mind that sensor technology tends to increase with time, so a state-of-the-art 10MP sensor will have as much noise as a state-of-the-art-around-2005 8MP sensor or a state-of-the-art-around-2003 6MP sensor of the same size. So I'm guessing the FZ18's smaller pixels are compensated for by better technology to reduce and prevent noise.

(By this logic, presumably they could make a 3MP compact nowadays that shoots a clean ISO800. Unfortunately, megapixels are what move cameras.)

that, and 3 megapixels really do suck.

Bridge cameras are made of XBOX HUEG and failure.

Compact or SLR. Pick one.

Perhaps, But if I could have a pocket camera that shot a clean ISO800, I wouldn't care that it was only 3MP. 3MP is perfectly adequate for viewing on a computer screen.

I don't think it changes that much. The 5D's two generations behind, but it still whips the 40D when it comes to noise and dynamic range.

What do you all think of the Canon S5 IS?

Thinking of the Panasonic Lumix FZ8 as well. Looking for a sub-300 camera that isn't fail.

Canon G7 or G9. Can't go wrong with them.
