Okay Im planning to buy my first flash for eos 400d.
Should I go for Canon Speedlite 430EX (version I) or Sigma EF-530 DG Super Canon.
These both are pretty costly for my budget, so would even cheaper flash do the job for me?

Go with the Canon.

Vivitar 285HV or Sunpak Super 383

Manual flashes are perfectly adequate for most handheld use and cost peanuts.

Just picked up a 430EX mk1. It is well designed and amazingly intelligent at getting the lighting just right on short notice. Totally worth the $220 I spent on it.

Ouch. If you are willing to take the risk on warranty try getting one gray market.

It is plastic but it seems like good quality. I would say if you hit it hard enough to break it, that is the least of your problems.
