if you're a canonfag/nikonfag, tamron 17-50
>> Anonymous
no such thing as cheap + fast aperture + zoom

your best bet, assuming it's Canon are

50mm 1.8/1.4
85mm 1.8
20mm 2.8
28mm 1.8
35mm 2.0

unless of course you've got money and $1,000 is cheap for you, then in that case, all the 2.8 zooms are opened up to you

OP here, Yeah im a canonfag :) iv been asked to go do photos for a music festival in august for a friends band which should be fun :) but im not sure how far the stage is gonna be from the photopit
sooo im not sure if im gonna need a zoom lens :/ seeing as its open air and mainly all day i guess it doesnt need to be too high, i guess i might be able to get away with a F/4 or something
what you recons?
>> Anonymous
>>176197
Do you mean zoom or telephoto? They mean two entirely different things.
>> Anonymous
>>176198

hmm good question
telephoto might be better :)
>> Anonymous
>>176197seeing as its open air and mainly all day

... you don't need 2.8 for that

i smell a troll
>> Anonymous
>>176203
i know i dont need that fast apeture for an open air but i was thinking if i bought f/2.8 then i could use if for when i do indoor music photography where a fast apeture is needed

>>176197
There is no "photopit". Its not a fucking fashion show, its a music festival. The photographers are in front of the scene behind the fence that the audience is leaning on. And no, that is not a photopit.

Find out how far the stage will be. Figure out how tight you'll want to shoot. You can't make any decisions 'til you get that.

Sigma has a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 for around $800. It gets reasonable reviews last time I looked. Go look at reviews on fredmiranda.com.

Well see, here's the problem.

If you're right up against the stage, you'll need either a wide or a normal if you want to do more than grab portraits of them.

If you're farther, you'll need a medium tele to get a wider view and a longer tele for tight shots.

My suggestion: Buy a 50/1.8, an 85/1.8, and a film body, used to cut down on your costs. Then you're covered from 50mm on film to 136mm equivalent on digital. You've got some overlap, with the 85mm on film and the 80mm equivalent 50mm on digital, but oh well.

Alternative, but slightly pricier: a 28mm or 35mm lens replacing the 50. You'll have wide (28 or 35mm on film), normal (28 or 35mm on digital), medium tele (85mm on film) and long medium tele (85mm on digital). But the 28/2.8, 28/1.8, and 35/2 are all more expensive than the 50/1.8.

As for film, what hours of the day and date are you going to be shooting, so we can suggest one of the right ISO?

Good luck, read up on photographic technique, study good concert photos, and bring back some pictures.

damn. i didn't know sony/zeiss had a 135 1.8. that's almost lustworthy, if it wasn't mounted on a sony.
>> Anonymous
>>176223
Right, I assumed you had a digital body. The point of getting a film body is that you get two lenses in one. A 50/1.8 on digital is a medium telephoto lens. On film, it's a normal. On digital, a 28/1.8 is a normal lens. On film, it's a wide.

For ~$50 for a used film Rebel, you'll essentially double the lenses you have.

i have to say a 135mm at 1.8 is kind of impressive

even Canon only has 2.0 teles and they cost a ridiculous amount of money

If they're a serious group, you can probably get in front of the blockade and right in front of the stage with plenty of movement around you if you and your friends tell security that you're a photog for them. They might make you move for the other bands, but at least you'll get good shots of your friends.

If they're not a serious group, then don't worry about it. You could probably get right up front and around the stage without any hassles.

Pic very fucking related.

Took some like that, got too much blur for my liking. The ones I took at 1000 ISO I think were at 1/60-1/80 but bumped up in CS3 came out pretty good but I like that one shot more than any of the other shots I managed to grab with those settings.

Dierks Bentley concert at Slippery Rock University, PA. God I hate country music.

Man this shot looked so much better in lab color...

You are either really new or then really good troll.

Good troll ( <-- see, i took bait, if you are a troll, i just got trolled, in which case: Damn you!) is not obvious. A troll feeds on reactions it fishes out of people in various ways, pushing buttons and triggering RAAAGEEE reflexes on fanbois or just making them look stupid in front of others by answering an obvious stupid question or getting led astray in some other manner.
