What does /p/ think about skateboard photography?
It's something I'd like to get into, anybody done any?

Also what sort of lenses are typically used? I'm presuming wide angle/fisheye?
>> Anonymous
I'm not sure but that snap is awesome!
Who took it?
>> Anonymous
>>160452
It was on flickr under the 100 greatest skateboard photography group or something

Wide angle for most shots. Tripod mandatory when continuous shooting a line or something. Fisheye if you want to get interesting.

Correct me if I'm wrong /p/

Most common lenses looking on flickr are 80-200mm, 15/16mm fisheye and 10-20mm wide angle
>> reinfected !ow2gJBhuig
>>160448
I've done some snowboarding which is somewhat like skateboarding photography. Only did it for a friend once so it's not like i'm a pro at it or anything.

I used a wide angle lens and no tripod. Didn't really attempt any of those sequence pictures but I guess that's the new thing.

Obvious tip is obvious: when they're jumping off whatever, make sure you shoot as low and beneath them as possible. Makes their jump look more epic than it really is.
>> Anonymous
Because I'm so fucking cheap what does /p/ think of them fisheye attachments you can get for the end of your lens? There about $60 and they turn you lens into a wide angle.
>> Anonymous
>>160767
Convert a cheap lens into a fisheye
theres some video on jewtube of how to do it
>> Martin
>>160767

I bought a cheap £50 Opteka fisheye for my Nikon D80, for that exact reason.
None of the photos I took with it where really sharp enough to use/publish. Apart from the Dead Centre. Which is useless in my opinion.

Also the colour fringes ruin the outcome.
Dispite the large angle coverage, and the wide aperture the Opteka fisheye didnt seem to filter the light through very well, resulting in dark/underexposed photos.

Although, this could just be down to my personal technique and expertise - but its up to you.

*I still own this lens, just as abit of fun

If your using a Nikon, Then i'd HIGHLY reccomend you buy the 10.5mm fisheye. Its the best £500 you'll ever spend if you want to achieve that effect :)
>> Anonymous
>>160769

Or alternatively catch aids, both are as fun.
>> Anonymous
Yes I'm a Nikon user £500 is a bit steep, I'm pretty sure theres a Nikkor 16mm for like £240

this lens on ebay £298

not that bad
and 16mm is more commonly used in skateboarding than 10mm
>> Martin
>>160773

Me again.

I've read about the 16mm, and if I remember correctly they retail for about the same price.
BUT
you've got to remember that the 16MM is for a FULLFRAME dslr (d3), and the 10.5mm isn't.(d80).

From speaking to a friend, the Sigma 8mm Fisheye retails at around £400ish. and will fit a d80, but not a FULLFRAME Dslr.

Again, I don't know what camera you own, so I cant really make any reccomendations :)

Wow thats cheap!
Almost to cheap to believe really.
I got mine for £549.
Local jessops dealer, Although this kinda' explains the price raise.

I've had bad experiences with sellers from Hong Kong before tho, charging extreme amounts for postage etc :P

Another option; although not sure if the autofocusing would work with your camera:
Zenitar 16mm. £120 ish.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>160785

Jessops is often a rip-off. eBay all the way. Check Camera Price buster for native dealers too.

>> Martin
>>160793
Yeah
Thing with jessops is.
Is if i 'accidently' drop this lens tomorrow, i'll get a full refund/replacement.
haha.

Think warrenty lasts for 3 years?
Also cleaning of the elements etc is free aswell.
But then again
I didn't really wonna pay £100+ for that :p
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>160797

After meeting some of the local Jessops staff I don't have much confidence in them to do anything other than ship boxes and wipe their own arse and I am not too sure of the latter.

>>160802

Ah right
Well, my 90% local branch(S-O.S) are all involved with photography in one way or another. One of the guys in there is a freelance photographer and working to save money to buy a studio. So I often find going to them to get a second opinion.

Even they reccomend me to go online, instead of jessops, which is quite ironic :P

I guess every branch is different.

The fact that there is a genre called "skateboard photography" is overwhelmingly gay enough without actually taking part in it.
>> Anonymous
>>161511
Skateboard photography's been going on since to 1960's it's hardly a new, young, poser thing.
>> Anonymous
>>161514

Man on man rape has been going on for a longer time and it's still pretty gay too. Not quite as gay as this though.
>> Martin
>>161514

Now days its ALL skate pho. seems to just be low level photos, taken with a fisheye and a crazy shutter speed. Which don't get me wrong, it does look good - but after a seeing it 4 or so times, it gets old waaaaay to quickly.
>> Anonymous
>>160467

I still don't know how you do this.

>>161524

And you can say the same about any niché photography. People who take pictures of nascars aren't going to be very diverse from one another etc. etc.
>> Anonymous
>Also what sort of lenses are typically used? I'm presuming wide angle/fisheye?

Who cares what's "typically used?" Do you want your to look like all the other tools doing it?

Learn what sort of lenses make what effects. Pick those effects. Buy the lens and a camera it goes on. Me, I like normal focal lengths, so if for some reason I ever shoot skateboarders, I'll have a normal lens propped on there.

Even though the only time I've ever actually done so was one grab frame of a guy off in the distance when I was shooting something else with a supertele.
>> Anonymous

>>161540
David Alan Harvey shot NASCAR with his usual kit at the time- a Leica M6 with 28, 35, and 50mm lenses. Results were awesome, much more interesting than a generic picture taken with a supertele of two cars jockeying for position that could've been taken at any other race by anyone who knew how to work the equipment.

Pic related.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>161540
And so that shows the difference between a good and great photographer. Anybody with training and practice can take a sharp shot of a car going around a track, but to take one that people actually remember requires skill. Which might actually (gasp) require originality.
>> Anonymous
I was just using nascars as an example, and of course there will always be somebody who has original ideas. But you can't say that skateboarding photography doesn't have any unique pieces.
>> Anonymous
>>161550

It's just so retarded, bland and almost always talentless kids photographing some disgusting fat kid or annoying ass doing the same lame stuff (wide angle shot of him on a rail or jumping - repeat ad nauseum). I'd honestly rather look at holiday snaps or amateur portraits, even MySpace/DevianTart ones would be mildly interesting compared to this.

"Sports photographer" is something I can respect. "Skateboard photographer" is just retarded.
>> Anonymous
I think OP is a good shot though :D
>> Anonymous
>>161553

Me again.

I'd like to add that I do not think that adding a skateboard somehow makes it instant fail, just that those who, for some strange reason, decide to specialise in this area tend to do it badly and be rather prominent and so the results are boring.

I think if more approached it inventively or said said they wanted to take a portrait that happened to be of a skateboarder and so on then it would be much better than the aimless snapping for the millionth of boring people on a board with wheels doing nothing special at all.

It is a subject that requires a skilled or inventive photographer to be able to hold any interest at all and it so rarely gets that.

I've done work with lots of skate brands (I personally have never skateboarded in my life, and I'm far too old to start). When I first started, I was shocked to find my models were pimply faced teens, instead of the models I usually work with. Sure enough though I took a lot of action shots and got what Quicksilver wanted.

My best piece of advice is to follow your own style when taking pictures of skaters, don't stick with the fisheye/wide angle lens just because it's what everybody does.
