being bored out of your wits is fun sometimes, albeit useless...

What do you get when you combine an onboard flash, a styrofoam cup, foil, some pins and an empty film canister? the world's most useless pseudo-ringflash!

if so, what flavor?

a ringflash needs to go around the end of the lens for the signature effect. that said, you can come close by positioning as close to the lens as physically possible. still, experimentation is good
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>158645

Make your next DIY project this now you've got the idea.
>> Anonymous
Well, she's using the built-in flash for this design. Might be a bit tricky to modify this for the common ring light position.

Other than that, might as well try it out on objects to see how this one looks. Plz do post if you find it looks cool hehe

Also, I'm going to have to second this request. Please.

>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
I've seen a ringflash adaptor made for the on-board flash. It works well enough as a lower power ringflash. Okay for macro or close up work and I've seen some head shots done that way.
>> Anonymous
Everything I've read suggests that the onboard flash just won't be good enough to create a ring flash.

http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/09/super-cheap-diy-ring-flash.html

Because of this (and whiny friends) I've decided that I need to get a flash of some sort, but they're expensive and I can't tell what I need.

UGH.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>158826

Get an old manual external flash rather than a dedicated one if you want to save money. You can get the Vivitar 285 and others for a good price and they seem well liked.

I've not used that model, so I can't compare it with others I've tried.

whats better the vivitar 285HV auto or the 285HV manual?
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>158850

There's only the one as far as I know.

The Sunpak is suggested by some as another good cheap option: Sunpak Super 383

Have a read at some of the customer comments on Amazon too.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>158857

And Sunpak Auto 444D
>> Anonymous
what do the ones with auto do? do they set the distances and powers and everything or what?
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>158861

I've heard the Vivitar called "manual" by some and others call it "auto". "Auto" can mean anything - from it having a thyristor like the older generation flashes to being all fancy and dedicated like the Canon 580ex.

Marketing speak. Read up on the features carefully. Each flash has its own pros and cons. Don't go by the name as they can call it what they like and the listings for the same model vary a little.

Just make sure if you're buying used that you get the 285HV and *not* the 285. Shouldn't be an issue if you're buying new, since the 285 hasn't been made in a long long time.

(The 285 isn't safe to use on digitals, the 285HV is)

I want to approach you from behind and put my hands over yours. I'll be able to feel your soft hair on my face and kiss the back of your neck. You close your eyes and let out a peaceful sigh. You loosen your grip and lightly press the shutter. The photo was out of focus but that didn't matter right now. You lower the camera with my hands still over yours and let go leaving it to hang by its strap...
>> Anonymous
>>159522
Pentax and Canon can't use old flashes with high trigger voltage without adapters. Nikon, Olympus and Panasonic can. Sony has a proprietary hot shoe which won't fit old flashes anyway.
