Hey /p/, I need some advice. I've been waiting to get a DSLR for a while and then Canon announced the XS for cheap ($700). However, now that it's out Amazon reduced the XSi price to $700 too. I was intent on getting the XS since the XSi has no more features that I'd use. And I disliked the giant screen on it.

But now that they are the same price, I might just get the XSi. Now before /p/ tells me that I'm an idiot to consider the XS over the XSi (or durrs and hurrs until the thread becomes unsalvageable), I'm pretty sure the price will come down a bit ($100) in a couple months.

So should I wait until then and get the XS with the 50mm f/1.8 or get the XSi now? I'd only have the 18-55 for the rest of the year then. There are no other options.

Being an XT owner, I'd go with the XS. Just because it's more similar to the XT and I really loved that camera.
But I personally outgrew the Rebel series and got a 40D.
So if you're not an amateur - save some money and go with the semi-pro models. You'll love the 30D or 40D.
By the way, the 18-55 kit, isn't that bad a lens... If you know how to use it :)

The 40D is waaay too heavy for me. Even the 1000D is a little too big and heavy, but I assume I'll get used to it. Whenever I upgrade in few years, I hope that the models will be a bit lighter. Otherwise, I don't plan to upgrade.

I realize that many love the extra weight and durability of the higher models, but I like lighter, compact cameras (like my point and shoot right now).

um... then why are you focused on a DSLR?
why not get the PowerShot G9 instead? Very good optics, light weight and rather versatile... Basically, the same features in terms of camera operation.
