1. Take a camera
2. Point in the direction of a stranger
3. Push shutter release button
4. Run away if needed

Actually, the general rule goes like this: the more you look like a pro photographer, the less likely strangers are going to be annoyed by you taking photos of them.

Funny, it works the exact opposite... People don't bat an eye at me with my 50mm on, but as soon as my 135mm comes out they're all "holy shit theres a photographer! hey mr.photog can you shoot the moon with that lense/how far does that thang zoom" Sucky for candids but good if you actually want to talk to the mouthbreathers for some reason.

Also act like you're taking a panorama shot. Start before the subject then take a picture of person then keep panning your shot. Ignore the subject. Again this is for candid stuff.

Also, Golden Rule: take picture first, ask for permission later

Woops... meant "it works the exact opposite FOR ME...

Hey, while we're on the subject of public photos; a long time ago someone posted a link to a PDF written by a private attorney. It listed the rights of a photographer in public settings. Anybody have it?

Sorry, i just realized that it's google result #1 if you search for "rights of photographer"

You're talking about candid photography, I have the impression that it wasn't OP's idea (judging by his pic at least). And anyway, a SLR with a 50mm lens is already pro enough.

For super candid shooting the best thing is a P&S camera with a flip-out screen, so you can pretend you're just playing with some settings or viewing photos.

The guide is for US only, too bad. But I don't think it's much different for most European countries.
(In soviet russia, obviously, strangers get pictures of you)

You know, a "Soviet Russia" joke is actually true for once. Lulz KGB.

Frame your shot in advance. Wait for somebody to walk by and trip the shutter. Give them an angry stare; they just walked into your picture.

Obviously won't work in every situation.

That is a beautiful technique.

I do something kinda similar on occasion. Point the camera at the person, trip shutter, continue to hold pointing at the spot they were in until they wander off. Make sure not to make any eye contact with them.

I love that thing. I hope to pick one up some day, even though it's optically a piece of shit.

I should try this out sometime

55014 here.

I'll try that out sometimes.

There is always hiding in the bushes with a telephoto lens. Might get you arrested, though.

OP: I've thought about asking people to pose for a school project. Never done it. Is this retarted?

OP: I meant takng pictures of random people with out them noticing you. Don't know what the technical term for that is. I posted the picture simply because I felt like it.

Pretend you're online. Then it's "lurking."

Use the zoom feature on people who are busy.

One must maintain their distance; to do that, one must break out the big guns.

rangefinders all the way for street photography and when you don't want to be "the" photographer at an event.

my first was an olympus XA, have a few photos. now I got an olympus RC that's a bit bigger and heavier but is better quality

portraits on a 35mm lens, up close and personal, and people rarely notice the compact camera with its very silent shutter

gah, so everybody gets to dislike you then cause you always seem to be angry? :)

some people admit they photograph strangers and smile or nod when they get noticed. I rarely do that, I more use hit & run techniques. exposure should be done in advance, framing should be in your head (know your focal) and often I guesstimate focus distance so I all that's left is bringing the camera to your eye and tripping the shutter.

Nice lens. I'd like something like that. I don't know if you saw the 3x teleconverter behind my lens giving me a focal length of 600mm. Still it's only good for being out on the street; with the 3x teleconverter attached it requires a good bit of light.

I don't know about where you live, but where I am it's all about making people think you're a journalist. Dress well, don't try to hide what you're doing, don't rush things. Give a strong enough impression that you're supposed to be taking photos in a public place and people usually won't bother asking questions or hassling you. On the rare occasions people ask me what I'm doing, I lie and tell them I'm an student working on an assignment.

Granted, I live in a fairly large city in a neighborhood popular with tourists, so maybe it works better for me than you.

For the guy who asked, here's the pamphlets on what photographers can and can't do:

That Zenit (which is borked anyway) is a prop, I use that lens on a Four Thirds camera, which makes it a 1000mm/f5.6... I need to buy a teleconverter like yours for the sheer absurdity of shooting with a 3-meter lens.

Kind of hard to do, if you look like a pervert/freak/geek, you know, those people who visit sites like 4chan.

My friend wanted to see how well I could shoot off a stealth shot with my new camera. Since I have an articulated LCD screen, it makes things easy.
