i'm going to go look at some pawnshops for 35mm slrs and rangefinders tomorrow, what should i look out for/ be aware of?

It's in a pawnshop, therefore there is no garauntee that it will work, try and check everything you can at the store, cock the sutter, try different speeds, etc.

I've yet to find a single working SLR in any pawnshop in Memphis, usually I see TONS of wrinkled shutter curtains. I see quite a few older nikons, but if it says nikon in vertical white letters on the grip under where your fingers would be, keep walking, there are better models on KEH for better prices.
