clubs around here are usually just gear whoring clubs, where the most money wins the most respect. Pictures come in a distant second place. Being a loner and doing your own research is what I did, though now I always have people who want to go out shooting with me, but they are interested in taking pictures, not in talking about camera equipment.
Theres also photographic associations and whatnot, but all they do is create a sort of pyramid hierarchy, in which you have to spend money to get respect within the organization. The higher up you go the more contacts you are supposed to get (ironic that at the top you are the contact other people pay to get access to)
It can be good to access a group fund of lights / lenses sometimes, but not all clubs are soo lenient with new younger members.
