Does /p/ have any suggestions on a nikon lens that would do well with night photography? I need something that will take in more light to cut down on shutter time (and therefore increase quality)

Here is another photo example of what I'm trying to do.

The first photo is just a picture of the full moon, and this second photo is a horse in field.

Keep in mind both photos were taken by myself at around 3am on Christmas, whilst I was very drunk with friends and their family. So don't burn me too hard :)

you need a tripod, not a lens.

I have a tripod.

Tripods help, but its not enough in the long run.

Well that statement right there disqualifies you from being smart, as does>>104737

Listen, champ. If you can't get by with f/8 and a tripod, give up now.

What do you want us to tell you? Get the fucking 58mm f/1.2 Noct-Nikkor if you want a real man's lens, faggot. Go on, pay the $3-5k. IT'LL INCREASE QUALITY. Get a brain.

Just a hunch, but I think he needs a lens too.

I'm confused by that statement. Because for night landscape i personally feel that longer shutter speeds are much better in 'increasing quality'.

Since it almost reduces everything in the frame down to its elements.

Any Nikkor lens will do, stop it down to it's sweet spot... oh get a tripod. Because no matter how fast a lens you get, for night you're going to have to bump up ISO and hence degrade IQ.

Well, there's a 18-50 2.8 or 18-70 2.8 depending if you do or don't want a nikkor lens. You could use a 35mm f2 prime, that's about $250.

Or you could use a 18mm prime for $1600. I don't think you are going to be able to get away with ISO 400 at night though.

The 18-70mm is a 3.5-4.5, it's not a 2.8

I forgot to mention on my post, to get the best quality nightshot.

Use lowest ISO possible, stop down to best f-stop for particular lens, SHOOT RAW, process raw with Nikon Capture NX (i personally don't use it, but it does do it better than anyone else cause of Nikon's secretive NEF).

18-55 f2.8. My bad, I was thinking of some lens makers. Nikkor is 18-55 or 28-70 in the f/2.8 range.

It's actually the 17-55mm 2.8 Nikkor, I have that lens and it's my primary shooter. Most of my shots on /p/ were taken with that lens.

The 18-55mm is the kit lens with the D40, though that not have a new one with VR.

Sigma has a 18-50mm 2.8, Nikkor has several 2.8 constants in the mid range, the 17-55mm DX, 17-35, the new 24-70 and the old 35-70mm too.
