All my camera equipment just got stolen (baaaaawwwwww), what's a good point and shoot until I can afford investing in a SLR system again?

Something inexpensive like the D40 or E-500 is out of the question?

Canon S5 IS? Loved mine. A little on the noisy side even @ 80 ISO, but still pretty good.If your going to spend that money though I'd go out and just get a Rebel XT

Well it's more that I'm not ready yet to get back into DSLRs and want a spare camera at least before I make a decision. Also I want to see what the Micro 4/3 system will bring.
>> Anonymous
4/3 has been out forever. It sucks. And you pay premium $ for a so-so lens.

>>233827
wat? There are cons to the 4/3rds system and olympus in general, but their lenses are second to none.
>> Anonymous
Name one stellar Olympus lens. If you want stellar go Nikon or Canon. Trust me, I've regretted using a third player mount.

Steller Olympus lens? You best be joking, Nikkor. Olympus's old film stuff had awesome optics for it.

For Four-Thirds, there's any of the Leica lenses for it and the 30/1.4 Sigma, and I've heard good things about several of the Zuikos, but I don't remember which ones.

Disagree, but whatever, subjectivity. And unless you plan using it at f/1.4 or whatever all the time, shouldn't any corner sharpness issues clear up enough stopped down?
>> Anonymous
>>233954
It may, but if you're going to use it stopped down why not just buy the manufacturer's 35mm f/2-2.8ish lens that will be sharper, smaller, lighter, and cheaper?
>> Anonymous
>>233965
Because starting at a larger aperture usually means it'll be better stopped down. Also, subjectively and from what I've seen from it (I have no clue what the thing resolves or whatnot) IMO it's very close to the top-end pro 35s.

The counterside, you're right, is size, and honestly I wouldn't want to shoot with it myself on a general basis (which is what a normal is for, for me at least, anyway). I don't own the lens myself, but I've never seen anything but amazing results from it.

I said Micro 4/3. Removing the shutter box from their SLR system... I want to see where they're going with this.

What are we expecting from the big names at Photokina for that matter? I do recall something about the D90 (if Micro 4/3 disappoints, I'll probably go with this depending on specs) being leaked and Sony finally announcing their flagship, anything else?

I've never owned the lens myself, but I've had too many Sigma EX lenses that were unusably soft wide-open and had build quality and consistency issues.

>Because starting at a larger aperture usually means it'll be better stopped down.
It really doesn't actually. That's an old addage left over from when all quality lenses were fast so naturally the faster a lens was, the better it was across the board. Now optical designs have become sufficiently advanced that most manufacturers' standard primes are so good that there is little room for improvement. Often sacrifices have to be made in order to make the lenses faster, so it's not uncommon for the faster lens to perform slightly worse than the slower one. An example would be Canon and Nikon's 50 f/1.4 vs 50 f/1.8. Also lots of manufacturers are concentrating on making very high quality lenses with slower maximum apertures since slow lenses with IS/VR are the current bullshit fad, so it's going to become more and more common to see newer slow lenses outperforming older fast ones. Even if the lens is slightly better at f/4 than the manufacturer's 35, if you have to stop it down to get there you're wasting your money on the useless f/1.4 when the manufacturer's 35 will be very usably sharp from the start.

That's what's so horrible about it. Corners are still godawful at f/4, let alone f/2.8. You really need f/5.6 or f/8 ... in which case I might as well be using a standard slow zoom.

To clarify, I've used a couple different 30/1.4s. The build is great. The center sharpness is great. The autofocus speed with HSM is great. But unless and until they improve the non-center sharpness, I just can't see buying it.

Obviously, the 5D II will come out (and if it doesn't there'll be hell to pay), and Leica is being all coy about releasing something big but "unexpected".

>>234113
Any rumors from Leica?

My understanding was that a full-on DSLR R10 was expected, but well, that's "expected."

Or, like you said, they could just be being coy.

This is why 4/3rds should never be mentioned on /p/

For a compact, get a Powershot A590IS.

R9 is heavy as shit. Like, EOS-1 full of double AA's and a flash heavy. But it is a DAMN fine camera, everything feels so polished, mroeso than any other leica save the MP. Local dealer can't seem to sell his, he's had the same one on display for atleast 3 years now.

Lumix LX3 24-60/2-2.8 lens and stabilizer. Also bigger sensor. One of the few serious small cameras out there.

I believe the interview went something like "oh man so that full frame DSLR's going to be awesome right?" and Kaufmann replied with a vague "oh it'll be big...and it might not be what you expect".

>>234141
I've seen several D3s and at least one D700 in private hands by now, and even the odd M8, but I have yet to see a single person using a modern R camera ever. Clearly money isn't the issue in my area as shown by the rest of the pricey gear around, so it must be that the R series is just about the most pointless line of equipment ever made. Though apparently the R3 and R4 outsold the Ms of their day.

>>234159
By that price point it's DSLR time.

I guess we'll just have to wait. "Not what we expect" could be anything from coy bullshit to autofocus to "fuck Barnack and the R system, we're going after Hasselblad big sensors and big money!"

I've never handled an R myself, but I've always heard the 8/9 body sucks as far as ergonomics go. That's probably why: either it really does or the reputation it does.
