when shooting raw+jpg, what processing is applied to the jpg?

is it the current picture style i have?

mostly jpegs just get a scrunch in bit depth, which means less quality when trying to bump up exposure like that.

.JPg's are automatically color balanced and white balanced in the camera. You lose a lot of invisible color data so that the file size can be compressed. Try editng a .Jpg sometime. It becomes very apparent that the data is lost when you try to boost the levels. Shooting in Raw is always preferable if you plan of post processing in photoshop.
