hey /p/, /p/oorfag here, I'll be getting a new D50 body soon and a 18-135 (D80 kitlens) from a friend for cheap. I'll have some money left over and I'm not sure which will be more useful to get first. An SB-600 or a 50mm f/1.8? I'll have to save up for two more weeks after to get the flash then a month to get the prime or I can get the prime right away but it'll be at least two months before I get the flash.

I'd say flash but it really depends on what you'll be shooting.

What if I say I'll be shooting anything?

I'm actually leaning towards the prime here because I'll need a fast lens/wide aperture and I already have an onboard flash which I can diffuse with a fujifilm canister for the time being.

Cant you not use wireless slave flashes with the d50?

I can but I don't have any flashes that can operate as slaves.

Buy neither and then shoot long enough to know what you need better. Don't buy too much too early.

Get the SB-600 first

The D50 does have have commander mode in it's inbuilt flash.

You're going to need a sb-800 or su-800 to fire another 800 or 600 or a radio trigger

I think this poster means to say "The D50 DOES NOT have commander mode". And thus a SB800 flash (or wireless trigger) is needed to fire other flashes (SB600's etc).

slightly related:

i had to choose a little while back between a minolta 50/1.4 and a 56AM and chose the 56AM.

Either way you're eventually going to need/want both.

i'd go with the prime lens dood
