When taking portraits etc which would you says works best for you in terms of light diffusion? A flash softbox (Are those inflatable types any good?). A reflector like the Flipit (I have one but it's problematic if you shoot portrait cuasing side shadow and requires an extra swing extension which I do not currently have). Or something like one of those Gary Fong lightsphere's? (What's the difference between branded vs unbranded Ebay cheapo lookalikes?)

This is for portability not for studio BTW.

It's always best to have the flash perpendicular to the lens no matter what diffuser you're using. Actually, it's always best to bounce properly but not all rooms or outdoors have that quality.

there's not much difference from gary fong's lightsphere from the cheap chinese rip offs.

either way, his products are super bulky.

i'd recommend getting the flash off the camera altogether but if you have to keep it on, i use the stofen omnibounce. small, light and the results are similar to the other two overpriced fong products.

I use the Fong lightspheres for everything I do. Very good diffusion if you don't mind a little bulk. If you do end up getting one though, get the hard plastic one that straps onto the flash. the soft ones fall off the flash head if you barely bump them.

The lightsphere is the "idiot proof" method as it removes control and just floods the place with light. You'll never get the same kind of results as you would with more thoughtful lighting.

I use Fong's pocket diffuser (Think he calls it origami or something?) and it does a pretty good job, without taking up any space that anything useful would fit in. Haven't used the lightsphere enough to really pass judgement on it, but it's pretty damn bulky for field use.

don't by fong's overpriced shit. buy the chinese versions or another brand.

Pretty much everything that Fong makes seems to have cheaper versions or alternatives that work better. I'd avoid his brand.

If anyone is looking for it on eBay or elsewhere, the cheaper version of Fong's Tupperware diffuser is called the "lambency".

I've held both of the cheap lambency and the Fong diffusers and I can't say that the Fong one will make you think it is worth 10x the price.
