I was just readinf about crop factors and my 450D has a 1.6 crop factor. I have an old EF 80-200mm AF lens that predates digital (I think). Am I assuming that if I times that by the crop factor I get a lens equivalent of 128mm-320mm?
>> Anonymous
Yes, but make sure the lens mount is EF or EF-S before you try and slap it on.
>> NotKordox !X5MdOLLFAg
It says EF 80-200mm 1:4.5-5.6 II

I have already 'slapped it on' and it works although the 450D has no red dot marker just a white square. Is that OK? Anyhow if it's OK to use it's a good free telephoto lens I can use.

However after saying this is there a good EF lens I can use that will give me an equivalent focal length from 55mm to 128mm or thereabouts (If the above lens if OK to use on the 450D body that is)?

>>298456

White square = EF, red dot = EF-S if I remember correctly. I'm not sure about the quality of the lens.

The closest thing to 55mm to 128mm is probably the 24-70mm f/2.8L (38mm-112mm equivalent). It's $1k+ though.

Honestly, I'd stick with primes. A bad prime is better than a good zoom (although a great zoom like an L maybe outperform an average prime; however, a prime L like the 50mm or 85mm will outperform the zooms).

Definitely pick up a 50mm f/1.8, don't bother with the 50mm f/1.4 as it won't be useful until f/1.8 anyway. For another good portrait lens, I'd recommend the 85mm f/1.8. Even sharper than the 50mm and 136mm equivalent.
>> NotKordox !X5MdOLLFAg
>>298458
50mm sounds good and is cheap. How is the 24-85mm EF lens BTW? No much good?

Is that sarcasm? For me I am quite new to this whole lens crop factor thing. In b4 rocking full frame trolls.
>> Anonymous
>>298464

Eh... your kit lens is better. It really depends on what you're using it for. Portraits, I'd spent that money on an 85mm f/1.8. If you're just shooting snapshots of the kids your kit lens is fine.
>> NotKordox !X5MdOLLFAg
>>298468
So I should really go with the 85mmas a prime if I want to shoot portraits? I must admit I get good photos from the supplied 18-55mm IS kit lens. I was just trying to figure out what other lenses are useful for someone who mostly shoots close indoors and telephoto outdoors (Because I hate being in peoples faces). The kit is good enough for wide and intermediate telephoto though.

>>298469

Well, give me an idea of budget and what you're shooting.

Indoor relatives. Outdoors wildlife, urban areas, occasional landscapes, group shots at weddings etc.
>> NotKordox !X5MdOLLFAg
Oh and budget would be around a couple of hundred £ or 450-500 USD.
>> Anonymous
>>298472

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 might actually be a better choice then. Much better low-light performance and a tighter crop indoors. Then save up for a 430EX to bounce indoors.
>> Anonymous
red dot is EF, white square is EF-S.
any EF lens will work on a crop camera. EF-S lenses won't fit an full frame. just to get this straight.

also, get the cheap 50 and go with it for a while.
>> Anonyfag of Borneo !bHymOqU5YY
I'd recommend you sticking with the kit lens for the time being.

So yeah this is /p/ and everyone says buy a entry level dslr and 50mm prime. Why? Because its good glass for cheap? Sounds fair enough.

The problem is its pretty much a useless lens. Ok its reasonable for portraits.. but still not as great as something longer like 80mm or 100mm. Its pretty good for live music i suppose.

Otherwise its pretty dumb. Its an akward focal length to walk around with. On street you are limited to having a single subject or moving so far away the subject moves into the background.

I think the only reason why people recommend a cheap 50mm as a first lens is so that kids with their new dslr want some noticeable bokeh to show how proffessional they are. Well fuck that.

Luckily i got out of this cheaply by purchasing an old ricoh 50mm for 20 bucks. Now i'd like to pass this on to everyone in buying first lens town, save your money for a lens with a normal to wide field of view if you want a walk around lens or a longer lens for portraits. Leave the 50mm for people who want minimum depth of field per dollar for wank factors. Crop sensors have killed the nifty fifty lets move on.

OK I took a crap load of photos. Some good. Mostly bad (User error lol). Actually the light conditions varied so much I was having trouble figuring out what I should be at. But that goes with experience I guess. Best shot of the day IMO was this one. I actually thought it was a dull shot but took it anyhow. Now I really like it. I guess it's because it has a narrative.

Nothing particularly interesting or good. However I somewhat liked>>298590because of the motion and exposure. It would probably look better with a tighter crop on the rightmost horse.

Stick to photographing with your current gear as better lenses won't make your pictures better. You seem to just take pictures of things right as you see them and from mostly eye-level, instead of finding a better angle or way to make the subject appear more interesting. Read up on some composition, and if you have already then try to put more of what you've learned into practice.

Could have been an interesting photo but the depth of field is extremely flat. The fence seems almost as though it was crookedly pasted onto an image of tire swings. Bump down that f-number, zoom out, and get closer.

Yeah the rider was already cropped down. The problem was there was not anough fill light coming from the side due to the light from the sun off my left shoulder. The only way I would have got enough light would have been to use a fill flash or reflector. By upping the exposure post processing all I was doing was illuminating noise and no real detail. I tried.

The tyre swing shots I liked but yeah you are right. I should have used a lower stop and tried to get a shorter DoF.

My skills (Or lack thereof) need work. I guess sometimes the subject matter is just uninteresting and you just have to move on and only take photos you think will work then try to think about how to compose them so they are better than just a plain shot. Getting in closer. Different angles. Rule of thirds etc. These things I am aware of but I always tend to screw up when I actually practice these things. I have spent FAR too much time indoors photographing objects (Figurines and dolls. That kind of crap). Going outside and trying to get good shots is a totally different ballgame. I love to photograph people though. I just have trouble getting in close for the shots due to fear of being berated by the people.

I already have had a couple of bad instances. Granted those were in parks though where people tend to think you are a pervert (Well I am but that's besides the point lol).

Next job. Go into central London and work the streets.

What would you recommend to replace it? I had a feeling it wasn't much good and the high F stop sucks (Slooooooow in low light).

lol you're funny. Most have very little post prcoessing. The white balance was custom and correct for the lighting conditions mostly. The only processing I apllied on the majority of them was a bit of auto tone in Lightroom but even then I rejected most of that due to it getting it wrong. So shut up unless you know what you are talking about.

What is that thing in the OP picture? I've been thinking about shooting with a poseable doll as a subject, and that seems cool
