/p/: A thought just occured to me... does crop factor affect edge sharpness - as the image circle is smaller there is less of the edge to be seen, and thus overall sharper pictures.

Or am i just being thick.

For your troubles, i give some low-quality street photography

Yeah, you're right.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
yes it does, but essentially only effectively on those lenses designed for 35mm.

Most APS-C orientated lens will still have poor edges and vignett badly on APS-C cameras. Most kit lens are an example of that.

But using lenses that were originally designed for 35mm that were horrendously soft at the edges, but pin sharp in the centre - is this a valid way of re-tasking glass that used to be poor?

yup

On the other hand, low resolution glass coupled with a smaller sensor sort of balances it out, as I understand it.

(Caveat: I have no personal experience with this, so I may be talking out of my ass)

All else being equal, crop is sharper than full frame and full frame is sharper than medium format.

What, are you agreeing with me or disagreeing by presenting the same argument?

Crop is also why its much harder to vignette on digital cameras.

Kinda disagreeing, kinda.

So okay, say you have some low quality glass. It's especially low quality at the corners, but not too bad in the center. Not great, but not really too bad.

With the crop sensor, you don't get that corner unsharpness because the edges are cropped out. But you also are, effectively, enlarging the resulting image more than you would with 35mm, which will make any problems with the center sharpness more noticeable.

However, my guess is that the two sort of average out (unless you have a lens that's especially good in the center and/or especially bad at the edges) so that a crappy lens is more or less just as crappy on cropped digital as on full-frame 35mm.

ok makes sense i guess.
