Okay, so yesterday I was bored and tried some of the reverse lens macro stuff.
Last time I tried it it worked, but the focus was always slightly soft. Anyway, when messing around I realised if you hold the lens at an angle, you get a tilt-shift effect.
Obviously it's nothing like a proper T-S lens, but it's fun enough.

And just a macro.

Has anyone had any sort of success with reverse lens stuff?

Bumping this before it falls off.
Doesn't anyone have any photos?
I'm interested in how well these can be done.
>> sage rage !3I4SJbCh8M
I approve of this thread, however I have not done any jury-rigged macro myself.

bump for using creative ideas instead of talking about them

Can someone explain to me this reverse lens macro stuff?

You get a 50mm 1.8 lens, and just reverse it on the camera.
At least that's all I did.
I've seen people taping it reversed onto other lenses, but I just held it infront of it.
I guess you can probably do it with other lenses, but you need the wide aperture unless you want obscene shutter speeds.
For the first and second photo, I had it the right way round, just not mounted on the camera, and angled it somewhat.

Okay, /p/ isn't really responding so I went back and tried it again.
This time I just held it infront of my 18-200.
Haven't resized so people can see the sort of focus I'm getting.
This photo was the last one I took, and was again held slightly at an angle from the lens.
Dumping a couple more.

You can take either a lens only and put it backwards on the camera or you can use 2, like in my picture. It yields very high magnification, especially if you use 2 short lenses and is a great alternative to a real macro lens if you don't have the money for it.

They make rings to attach 2 lenses, but duct tape works fine and is cheap.

They're pretty dark.
I wanted to keep the iso down but the shutter speed up, so I used a slave flash to illuminate what I could.

Alas I have just these two.
Contemplating selling the 18-200 and the D80 for a D700.
The 50/1.4 or the 50/1.2 are both very tempting, but I'm not sure I can really justify the extra money for half a stop and manual focus respectively.
I've also got my R3a + 40/1.4 which I would probably have to sell too. Can't really justify having that either.

but the 50/1.8 has full manual already? also, I hear the 50/1.4 is certainly lower in the bang/buck stakes than the 50/1.8 (from someone who owns both).

keep the 18-200 for travelling, unless you're ditching DX altogether :)

dammit, now you're making me wanna duct tape my 50 backwards
>> Anonymous
>>300215
I mean the 50/1.2 is only manual.
It would be tempting to keep the 18-200. But the D700's a hell of a lot of money, and I've just started uni. That said, I travel quite a bit, and that lens, faults aside, is a godsend. Apart from the wide end, I think those two lenses are a pretty much perfect budget combination.

And do it. You don't need to tape it. I just held mind up against it. See what happens if you don't use two lenses and just hold the 50 against the camera. I want to see what other people get with tilt shift thing.

so wtf does this actually achieve? you're able to focus on closer objects?

Yes, reversing your lens makes it focus closer. Try it yourself.

Incidentally, crappy P+S compact digital cameras are brilliant for macro work, because of their small sensors they can all focus to 5cm or less, wheras us SLR folk are generally stuck with 30cm or more (generally).

I've had some success using a reverse 50mmf/1.8 with my speedlight on a nearby tripod. Only problem is dealing with the intense DOF.. can't seem to do too much about it.

Exif? The second's a pretty extreme example. Did you crop it?

Anyway, OP here. I had another go at this last night and found the dof pretty hard to work round. But here's two I kind of like, for illustration purposes at least. I only had about six shots to choose from, as he wasn't too keen on having my sb-600 a centimetre from his eye..

EXIF is D300, 190mm, 1/250, f/20. The 190 is a film lens though, an old Tamron 70-210, so you'd have to do the conversion. Macro coupling ring to a film 50mm f/1.8, SB-800 with a cable on a short tripod to the left of both images.

Mosquito wing shot is cropped about 80%.

Okay, so yesterday I was bored and tried some of the reverse lens macro stuff.
Last time I tried it it worked, but the focus was always slightly soft. Anyway, when messing around I realised if you hold the lens at an angle, you get a tranny effect.
Obviously it's nothing like a proper TS lens, but it's fun enough.

Thanks. I've only recently started shooting proper black and white film.
I only ever used XP2 before, but I've just started a photography degree, and they don't like any of that C41 stuff.
I've just bought a lot of tri-x. Gonna push that baby to 3200 and see how it comes out.
I've been trying the t-s effect again, but can't seem to get it to work as well as I managed to in the first few shots..oh well
