Last shot for now.
I know flower shots are boring, but since this was a tropical greenhouse I thought some of these might be nice. Also I don't know how to properly use this camera yet so I'm nervous about shooting portraits.

C&C?

If you didn't adjust your camera settings, you can fix those things afterwards. Adjustments to contrast, saturation, that kind of thing.
Light like this is only nice in the sense that it doesn't have an impact on your own lighting, otherwise it's low contrast and makes everything gray. It helps to overexpose relative to your camera's meter in this light if you aren't using flash.
You've got a lot of nice colors, work on the your composition. This>>165310is the only one that doesn't just look like a snapshot. It'd be better with the people in focus, but even then it doesn't really show anything interesting.
Remember, it takes a hell of a lot of work to come up with a flower picture that actually stands out.

a lens flare would fix that and more DOF

i think op was saying that he did edit? i dont see any contrast problems in these so i assume thats what he meant? i dunno i may have a better monitor than you lol.

>>165309
contrast in this one is bad though. looks really washed out and just sort of blah.

i agree a lot of these look like snapshots though. i guess it is ok as like a record of flowers in the greenhouse but yeah not a lot of art here.

>It'd be better with the people in focus
i disagree it would be too flat if they were in focus.

Oops, missed that he edited in aperture.
Contrast is alright on some of them, but it's still boring lighting overall, very flat. That's why I recommend overexposing a little in this kind of light. Those were meant as very general comments.
About the people, you may be right. Hard to tell, but there's enough distance between them and the greenery that I still think there'd be a good sense of depth.

yeah, whites arent really white in most of these images. more of a yellowey-gray.

i still like the two shots with the people best, but maybe that's just because plants by themselves are boring and seeing people there makes the photos seem more interesting in comparison.

Yeah, I know. It is a poor craftsman who blames his tools, or however the saying goes. RTFM and whatnot.

Can you suggest anything for me to read about composition? I took a darkroom class once but it was strictly about film/photo developing technique and didn't cover composition at all.

Just google it, you can find some good basic articles quick. Otherwise, get on flickr or something and browse the kinds of pictures you like, and figure out what you think works.

Pretty good for a new user.

Contrast on all these looks pretty good, but the more you can do to fix the initial shot the better. Some of these look a little over-processed and as a couple people have pointed out that second image is pretty blah. It also looks a little out of focus to me, so next time you're shooting in a low-light situation you might want to consider bringing a tripod or a monopod or something.

If you are going to keep doing flower photography you need to buy a decent macro lens.
