sup /p/

this may seem like a retarded question, but will any 55mm filter fit on any lens that requires a 55mm filter?

Im wondering if a filter made by Tiffen/Sigma/etc will fit on all kinds of lenses.

WILL IT FIT?

Yes, it is retarded, and yes, they all will fit the required thread size.

thanks

also, who makes the best filter?

is a tiffen filter better than a sigma filter?

That depends on a lot of things. Usually the big three make the best filters, Minolta, Canon, Nikon. But of course, third-party filters can be great too. HOYA for one.

Ha ha ha, no. Most camera manufacturer filters are just re-branded Promaster or Sigma filters. Hoya, B+W, Heliopan, and Lee all make what could possibly be the best filters, but all of them make a full range from cheap and acceptable to expensive and excellent. The best filters will be through-dyed optical glass and multi-coated. Cheaper filters will be laminate, non-optical (window) glass, or plastic, and uncoated or single coated.

Ah, no. Heliopan and Rodenstock make the best filters out there that I know of.

I know that better filters are more expensive, but there has to be some appropriate middle ground.

If I'm not using L glass, just midcrap (say, 55-250IS), how little can I get away with paying for ND8 filters? [Considering that budget is an issue.]

While it'd be nice to have high-end Hoya or B+W filters, they're more than I'd like to pay. Is it viable to pick up cheaper filters?
