How does one go about getting a job or making money in general from their photography?

I could put an ad in the newspaper and be all "PHOTOGRAPHY FOR WEDDINGS, BIRTHDAYS, PARTYS, ETC" but I'm unsure what people would be expecting from me, exactly.
