You have to develop an intuition about which part of the scene to expose for (books don't tell you that), you have to learn how to frame (not much in books on that either) you have to learn what's the right aperture, so you get the right amount of isolation. Wide open on telephoto is not always the right answer. All these things I have yet to find in a book, and it's coming naturally to me.
However, if you find photographer that you are interested in, THOSE are the books you should be reading, not HOW TO books. As I've already enunciated, they are shit. I recommend Avedon's "In The American West",Don McCullin's (he's a war photog) "Is anyone Taking Notice" for starters. Those are just the guys I like. Do your own research. I can't tell you what style is worth studying.
