Hey, cheap camera for mountain biking? TrailPix
Hey, /p/

Total ny00b here. I need a suggestion for a good cheap camera that I can take mountain biking. My critera are:

1. It's gotta be fast & easy to get it out of my pocket and turned on. I have an older Oly, but it takes like 3 seconds from the time I open it before the lens extends. TOO LATE, sorry you missed the pic!

1b. Shutter lag must be minimal, for similar reasons.

2. Big LCD. Gotta be able to see if the shot I just took is what I wanted, quickly and possibly on the move.

3. Durable? I saw a ruggedized & waterproof sports cam, but it was nearly $400

4. Expendable. It could get dropped on a rock, or more likely it could get lost. Cost wouldn't be much of an object, except for this factor.

I saw a Casio on sale at Costco for like $200 about six months ago, but it's been replaced by a more expensive model.

What about the Fuji F650 6.0MP 3" that I saw at the Costco website for $160? It doesn't mention things like shutter lag, though, so, I don't know.

Expendable, please define price.

For fast, I'd say go for the Sony P series...but personally I hate sony.
WTF do you need a big LCD for? There's always the zoom.

You want waterproof, LCD, shock proof, get this:

Why do I need a big LCD? Because I want to be able to see it at a glance, even if my glasses are all grimed up, or if I'm in motion riding on a rough surface, or if I'm not wearing my contacts...

Yeah, I did see that Oly. That's the one I saw at Costco for just under $400. It's exactly what I want, except I want to pay $200.

I was thinking about the Canon SD360... it's popular @ newegg.

Unfortunately, you've got some competing requirements there. You're not gonna get something low price with a big LCD and low shutter lag.

You're also unlikely to get fast and small in the same package--you're gonna be upset with the power-on time and the shutter lag unless you get a dSLR, and a dSLR sure as hell won't be expendable or small enough to take mountain biking.

You're basically describing the camera that *everyone* wants, but which probably won't exist for a few more years. Sorry.

OK, I can accept that. I guess I'm just nervous because a friend of mine has a small cam for similar use, but the shutter lag is crazy awful.

I tried a Casio Exlim(?) that was tied to a display, and its power on time seemed really great, at least compared to my old camera. I would turn it on, and *zzzzz* the lens extended before I could raise the camera to frame the pic. I had no way to judge the shutter lag, though. That was about six months ago.

That's what got me to thinking that I should replace my old Oly, because I was pleased with how far the tech had come. Maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet and get the waterproof/shockproof Oly 770, as mentioned above. It's just a little too fancy/expensive. So, I'm just poking around for suggestions, when the bottom line is that all I really need is a camera that isn't going to piss me off, like my old Oly does. I just don't even bother bringing it with me. I should revise my wish list to say, "a camera that doesn't violate these critera too horribly"

Would I run into any ugly surprises with, for instance, the Canon SD360?

If anything, TRY THE CAMERA FIRST! Go to BB or whatever camera store near you.
Go play with it....
