Hay /p/,

I'm going to post photos taken with my relatively new camera. I'm also relatively new to photography as a hobby so I feel now is a good time to check in with the good people of /p/.

Constructive/Destructive criticism is welcomed and wanted. Thanks /p/.

Those three chicks had something interesting in their car, a bunch of cops showed up along with a K9 (sadly i missed him). The guy with the blue shirt and cap is a undercover cop.

Anyway, sorry for that flood but i figured it was better to post all at once than to periodically bump my own thread. I look forward to hearing from /p/.

PS. All the shots are in Naples, FL. I saw over 9000 cameras there today, most DSLRs in the hands of old white people; it made me kinda sad.

I like this one, but I can imagine it would be more interesting if you could get the shape of the curving sidewalk and the straightness of the building to stand out more. By like getting a higher angle away from the tree.

>>60327
I like it.

>>60329
Might be better if you could single in on the rail, which seems to be the main subject. Crop out the house/trees in the upper left.

The motorcycles are kind of boring in that composition. A different angle could really improve it, but it seems you were limited in that respect. I guess you can't exactly lay on the road as they pass or anything.

The black and white is good for contrast, but when you have so many things in the picture it can make it more confusing. Your first picture looks a little busy.

Good pictures though. I just suggest working on your composition, which is of course the hardest part. >.>

Very nice and well-balanced.

No real point to these shots. Try to find a good, tangible subject for your photographs. Pretty pictures are fine, but they don't cut it to have a punch, just like stylistic copies of "roses are red..." don't make good poems.

>>60323
>>60326
Not pointless; you had a subject. But still, these didn't work out. Editing, in the sense of learning which of one's own photographs are good and which aren't, is an important skill to learn. These just didn't end up having what a photograph needs. There's nothing wrong with them, but there's nothing right either.

Don't be discouraged, though: 90% of what any photographer shoots is like that. Professionals regard 1-3% of shots turning out as something worth showing to be pretty much par for the course.

>>60325
Try a different edit. Less saturation, less contrast. The composition is fine, but those are too much.

You've the S3IS. Turn the saturation down (I forget how far I did it when I used the S3IS), the sharpness up, and adjust the contrast judiciously based on the scene.

Also, if you're going to shoot in Black and White and have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (The latter is $100, if I remember correctly, and 99% as good as the full thing) use the Channel Mixer (Called "Convert to Black and White" in Elements) to get it to black and white. Different color light shows up differently in black and white, and Channel Mixer lets one control the relative intensity of red, green, and blue light. You can do this to a limited degree on the S3IS-play around with that- in color, but in black and white, it's fixed.

>>60327
Good. I like the geometry.

>>60328
The sepia is distracting, as are the feet. Also, the subject matter might be fun to shoot, but it isn't the stuff to share. Not original enough. Again, all photographers shoot a lot of fun stuff that isn't extraordianry enough to pass around.

Too plain. You should've moved up the table and tried getting some shots of those people in the very top corner.

"If you're pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough."- Robert Capa, who shot this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Capa%2C_Death_of_a_Loyalist_Soldier.jpg

(The photograph, not the guy.)

This could've been good if you weren't across the street. It's tempting to do that with a superzoom, so the best idea to get better is to try practicing using just the wide end or a little bit past, and leaving it there. Zoom with your feet.

As far as general advice beyond that, look at lots of good photographs. Just like a writer must read in order to write well, to get better and photography one must look at photographs. The very best place I've seen is http://www.magnumphotos.com/, which has thousands of photographs by most of the best photographers (of a certain type) ever.

Also, do you know the basics of exposure? ISO, shutter speed, depth of field and aperture? If not, read up on those on Wikipedia.

Thank you

Thank you too, Your comment about selecting photos is true. I have a lot of other photos but i had trouble deciding what should go on /p/. I also shot in color and played around with them in Lightroom for a few shots.

>>60341
Thanks for your advice; I do know about the basics of exposure, ect. I started on the other side of the street with that shot, but they were diverting car and pedestrian traffic away due to the K9 unit presence. It was hard to get that shot; I guess you just lose some. The attached pic is full wide from across the street; too much crap in the way.
