anyone shoot baseball? any pointers on what i should be taking pictures of? it seems like a game is only good for a couple of pictures, ie a pitch or the batter or something. my lens isn't fast enough to see the ball in most cases, and i think i'm going to be the designated baseball shooter for the rest of the season. HALP.

Batting, pitching, yes. Fielding is hugely awesome though, and where you get the best pictures, especially on really fast action like double plays and steals, etc.

I mean, if you like baseball, you already know where the good stuff is. It's the stuff you cheer for and yell at the TV.

well .... sports photography pretty much consists of needing a fast telephoto and a tripod. there really aren't any ways around it when it comes to field-based sports. unless they are willing to provide you with a $1000~3000 lens you're not gonna be able to provide anything decent except team photos.

i'm sure if you sit them down and let them know this .... they'll think you're blowing smoke up their ass. but it's your fault for jumping the gun. people get the wrong impression that just because you have a camera in your hand you can shoot in every situation. it's your responsibility as a photog (amateur or pro) to not let them believe that.

chances are they'll be angry and kick you off the assignment. but that's better than staying on and giving horrible shots over the next few weeks. then they'll think you just don't have any skill instead of being under-equipped

These photos look absolutely fantastic for being at ISO800.

Baseball is boring and overdone. Bad subject. It is pointless for you to try this unless you are practising for a career in it.

i've never been a fan. fielding seems like something i was definately missing out on

canon camera, provided equipment is nikon and i don't really want to make the switch. doubt they'd invest in a lens when only 2 of us are shooting canon. 2.8 was too expensive for me. seems kind of pointless to rent one, maybe i'll upgrade over the summer or something

and thanks.
by no means want to make a career shooting baseball, just sort of a student opportunity type deal

Don't switch equipment. The look of the files you're getting is perfect. Keep using the body and lens you're using and processing it the same way. They're pretty good photographs, but you've got the look down just right.

I can't help you much on getting the photographs better, since I've never shot sports, except once when I didn't have my camera with me and someone a friend handed me a Powershot (A-series, thankfully) and asked me to take photographs of him playing in this Ultimate Frisbee game for his lover.

I do! (sometimes)
F4 is fast enough if thats what you have, just don't take pics at the late games (When they need the lights)
Basically just work on keeping the ball in the frame. Baseball is actually pretty challenging, because of how quick and short the action is (AND THE HUGE WAITS BETWEEN...)
I almost always seat myself between home and first plate (best spot for maximizing potential shots I find)
focal length I find I need around 150-400mm (my lens maxes out at 280 f4, so I just kind of work around it)

if you can try to keep your shutter speeds above 1/640th, the ball looks decent in the air at that speed (for throws) Pitching and batting however, 1/1250 is the recommended minimum.
I kind of framed this shot wrong, but I was shooting around a player waiting to bat :(

I have quite a few more shots, let me know if you want to see more. I didn't get anything "epic" but I have a little bit of variety in my shots.

oops. but yeah, i'm not going to change my equipment, though it was tempting having thousands of dollars of lenses at my leisure...

>>134284
and wow, these are great - thanks for the advice. i made the mistake of shooting some of the game at 1/400 and less, i bumped up the iso and went to 1/1000 later on when i was trying to get some more action in the photos but i wasn't really looking for the right things. i definately know what you mean about short bursts of action and a long wait in between.

You have to shoot blindly to get the ball in frame for pitches / hits. I can see baseball as a ridiculously high shutter actuation sport.

1/1600 and still motion blur on the ball...

indeed. i ended up getting a handfull of pictures such as the one you've got there, when they're small the ball blur isn't so bad but it just pisses me off. hopefully the next game it will be nice and sunny outside
