hey /p/ i know nothing about cameras...My GF who does photography (but isnt up to date on the technology) just bought a Nikon D70 6.0 MP and a Sigma DC 18-50mm 1:2.8 EX D Lens, for $750(nice carry bag, 1gb flash and extra battery included).

Good deal or not?

if thats the lens im thinking of, its $500 new, so youre getting the D70 for $250, so overall good deal. even if both are used, its still pretty good deal. whats the point of asking anyway, you already bought it.

both are used seem to be in really good condition...she was told the lens was originally like 1400. They guy she bought it from is a wedding photographerÂ… Just wanted to know if she got ripped.

It's a $375 lens (assuming we're talking U.S. dollars). Still a good deal.

If she was told it was comparable to the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 (which retails for about $1400), then that would be fine. The Sigma retails for $500. I wouldn't say she was ripped off, just that she didn't get the awesome deal she thought she was getting.

ok i was mistaken, she was told the lens was 400 retail and the body was 1300 retail...would that be about correct?

(thx for your help so far...)

body alone was $1000 retail, $1300 with kit lens, and was replaced by the D80.

The body $1300 retail? Lawl, maybe 5 years ago.

that's a great deal.

If she got it from a 'pro' then he should have taken good care of both things too.

Make sure the D70 has up to date firmware. Goto Nikon's website to check that out.

I know nothing about the 18-50mm, but i do have the nikkor 17-55mm and if quality is comparable to that... then wicked.

Pro's are known to keep their camera's in cosmetically good condition. But Wear the fuck out of the internals.

My D50 is not a Pro use camera, and has 35,000 shutter actuations on it in less than 2 years.

So Until we see some exif we won't know how many the D70 has taken yet.

So ya post an unmodified pic on here, it will show shutter actuations.

Right, by internals you mean the shutter... anyone and everyone who uses a camera will wear the fuck out of it.

If it's cosmetically good it means it probably hasn't been bumped, dropped or anything that could do real damage.

An old shutter is part of the second territory.

i know someone who's warn out their shutter on their D70, after about 55,000 as i remember.
Its pretty simple and cheap to replace, he went to the local Nikon service center and they replaced it in 30mins and was about NZ$100. Apparently nikon's are pretty modular inside and the shutter assembly is easily replaceable.

Yeah i forgot the mention the D70/s' shutter has a less wear and tear life span due to it's full mechanical construction, the likes of the D80 with half elec half mech last longer.

well dont buy a canon.

i just had to replace the shutter on my 30D after only about 15K shots...

pretty disapointing, but luckily it was under warrenty. still took 3 weeks though

I'm over 30,000 shots on my Canon with no problems, and it's a nominally lower model than yours. I'm guessing you just got a bad camera, not that all Canons (or even all 30Ds) are bad.

Thanks for your help anon...first post in /p/, you all seem a lot more helpful than the other boards...

original pic is unmodified, EXIF shows a tad under 9000 actuations. Gf was told this was a back up camera so...
