I'm thinking about getting a Canon 350D EOS digital SLR.

Though I really don't know a whole lot about digital cameras. Is this a good choice? What do you guys think?

what i did is i bought a high dollar sub-SLR (say a canon s3iS) and learned the ropes, after a year or so i finally upgraded to a Rebel XTi when i felt i could really use it

This is actually a good idea, although I'd personally recommend going with a lower-dollar camera that you can fit in your pocket but which still has creative controls and whatnot. That way, the camera will still be useful to you as a go-anywhere pocket camera after you upgrade to an SLR.

You mentioned that you don't know a whole lot about digital cameras. Does that mean you're experienced with film, or does it just mean you're not very experienced with cameras in general?

I have taken a year of high school photography, which was all film.

I'm just not sure what to look for in a digital camera.

get the d40. Same price, MUCH better.

Care to elaborate why?

Ah, in that case, yeah, the 350D's a pretty good choice. There's also the option of the Nikon D40, which Nikon brought out specifically as competition to the 350D.

I'd advise you to look into the reviews for both the cameras to get into further detail as to why it's a better choice.

Get a Nikon D40. Apart from it being much nicer to hold, it's got a much brighter and larger LCD, there's really so many reasons why it's better. Go check it out at dpreview.com

BTW, fyi, more MP means nothing. MP are a myth unless you want to print out huge posters.

Summary:
(350D)
+ higher resolution sensor (8MP vs. 6MP)
+ (very slightly) higher rate of fire
+ support for every one of Canon's autofocus lenses
+ 7 autofocus points.
- Slightly more expensive (looks like their street prices are within single-digits of each other, though)
- Smaller LCD

D40:
+ D40 has bigger LCD
+ Can take infinite JPEGs without making you wait for the buffer to flush
+ Slightly larger sensor. 1.5x crop instead of the Canon's 1.6x.
+ ISO3200 mode available (it'll be noisy, but at least it'll be there)
- Much more limited selection of lenses if you don't want to manually focus all the time.
- Only 3 autofocus points

Really, the best way to choose is to go down to a store that sells both of 'em and try each one out in your hands and see how you like 'em.

350D in terms of noise is worse than the D40 as well.

And the D40 is better ergonomically.

And the exposure of the D40 ranges between -5 and +5.

And the D40 is SLIGHTLY lighter.

D40 = 400D > 350D

Pricewise D40 is the best bang for the buck. But, that's my opinion.

Ergonomics is different between everyone.

I love holding my 400D, I can't stand holding Nikons. They feel weird to me.

Ergo is a personal thing.
