I also noticed I'm getting some weird 'banding' on some of the photos. Anyone know what it is?

(i'm sure it's something simple like the camera not handling the darkness properly)

nah, noise is one thing, but cameras also have a quite constant systemtic "dark image" wich can be photographed with lenscap on. Obviously this can be substracted from the image. It is also useful to make several phozographs and average them for reducing the noise. Whatev.
