pentax spotmatic
i think a shitload others too but that's the first one to come to mind
you can buy adapters for k-mount too but you cant use wide-open metering with them iirc

aint nothing wrong with screw mount bro

Probably gonna want to just get an adapter. If not you're probably mostly looking at zenit, cosina, chinon, and a few pentax bodies. I'd suggest spending over 9,000 hours in google and finding something that suits you.

No bro shit, thanks. And I never said there was, unless you're an idiot who mounts it wrong. That's beside the point though. OP pointed out there are dozens of dirt cheap m42 mount lenses, I stated why.

If you want a native M42-mount camera, here's a list:
http://anusf.anu.edu.au/~aab900/photography/cameras/cameras.htm

Also, there are adapters to use M42 lenses on most bayonet-mount cameras, but there are some caveats:
1) You'll have to use stop-down metering and manually close the aperture
2) Most AF SLRs, especially digital ones, have viewfinders badly suited for manual focus.
3) Nikon and Olympus OM (don't confuse with Olympus 4/3) bayonet cameras either won't focus to infinity with M42 lenses or the image quality will be degraded, depending on the adapter.

For digi, get an M42 > EOS adapter and shoot Canon.

If you're shooting film, M42 shit typically is not that much cheaper than a Nikon FE2 and some old AI lenses. The quality on the older Nikkors will be more consistent as well when compared to beat down copies from the 8 zillion manufacturers of M42 lenses over 8 zillion years.

I will say this though, you can find some WACKY lenses in M42, even if they aren't that cheap. And the 50/1.4 SMC Super Takumar is LEGEND.

1. You have to manually stop down the aperture before the shot, at least on the M42s I've seen (though I think there are some that have automatic diaphragm control on newer M42 cameras)
2. Multiple rotations to remove and mount a lens = sloooow compared to the quarter turn in either direction required for bayonet-style mounts.

If you're adapting M42 to a newer camera, buy a shitty ebay bayonet adapter for each lens, so you can just leave it on. That way, you only have to screw it in once.

I see takumar M42 lenses every week for a few dollars. But I can't seem to find nikons and nikkor lenses for that price..

Getting a focus confirmation chip is crazy, in my opinion. You can get Canon M42 adapters for single digits off the 'bay. I don't mean to shit on anyone, but if you need a focus confirmation chip you are missing the point. I shot Super Takumars, CZ, Nikkors, all sorts of crazy shit on a 20D for years, and it was fine. The 20D is a dark, dank, dungeon of a viewfinder compared to the 40D or 5D, too.

My original point is that if the M42 lens is less than the cost of a happy meal, sure, why the fuck not, buy 10 of them and find the best one in the lot to offset the sample variance. Otherwise, if you want to just get a lens and keep it, and shoot with it every day instead of working your way through a pile of garage sale gimmicks, just get a Nikkor. The 50/1.4 AI converted, 50/1.8 AI/S, 50/2, 35/2, 85/2, 105/2.5, etc, can all be nabbed on KEH for under $50 if you wait it out.

There are some M42 winners out there (50/1.4 Super Takumar SMC), but the vast majority just aren't going to be that useful. If it comes down to it, and you really just want the holga thrill of shooting through a thrift store find, go for the gold. But don't waste money on shit like chipping if all you want is that dreamy retro look.

The fujicas are the cheapest of the best M42 bodies.
Open aperture stop-down metering isn't a bother at all, pre-set stop-down metering is a bother.
