Insurance Anonymous
Right. Taking a two-week trip to Scotland in a month. Should I insure my gear for theft or damage? I haven't really done any long-distance travelling before and never with camera gear in tow, so I'm in uncharted territory here. I'll be taking a Nikon F3 and a couple of (relatively) inexpensive lenses.

Pursuant to that, do I need to be concerned about film being ruined by x-ray machines/being detained for bringing a bomb back with me if I use one of those x-ray-proof bags that the shops sell?

The security checkpoint X-Ray machines won't do jack shit to your film unless it's exposed at ISO800 or higher. If it is, ask for them to hand-inspect it.

The baggage x-ray machines will fuck your shit right up, though. So, don't check film or a loaded camera.

I'd stay away from those if I were you. Best case scenario, it pisses off the baggage handler who now has to do a hand-inspection of your bag. Do you want a pissed off, minimum-wage baggage handler rifling through your underdrawers?

It'd be nice to have someone else rifling through my drawers for a change.

At least get travelers' insurance, when I've bought it there was like an extra five dollar price that insured my electronics.
And I went to Scotland last year. Absolutely beautiful.
