Ok, so I've been doing a little looking around on eBay and I've run into a question. How do I know which lenses will fit on my cameras? I have the Nikon EM and Pentacon Praktica MTL3 pictured. I'd kinda like to just get a coupla lenses to goof around with and figure there must be some cheap lenses out there for them. I've seen the Nikon EM go for 20$ on eBay WITH 3 lenses. I'm not really looking for anything particular, telephoto or zoom or macro, I more would just like to buy a lens or two to mess with. I have no idea if it will help but here are the lenses the cameras came with.

The Nikon came with:
Nikon Lens Series E 50mm 1:1.8
2073728

The Praktica came with:
Hanimar Auto Lens F = 135mm
1:2.8

Hanimar Auto Lens F = 35mm
1:2.8

Pentacon Auto 1.8/50
Multi Coating

research the models and what type of mount they have, then research the lens' for sale, if the mounts match your golden

Hmm... ok... I'll go looking around. The Pentacon one has a threaded mount by the way and the Nikon one is shaped like a radioactive symbol. Sadly I can't tell eBay either of those when searching for lenses lol.

google the model and find a site that tells you the name of the particular mount system
THEN ebay to your hearts content
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
the nikon is an f mount, of course. if it's a nikon slr, it's always, always, always an f mount.

practika is m42 mount, which means there about sixty million different lenses from which to choose.

Here is some info on the Nikon EM

All nikons use the F mount

Wow thanks guys this has been a really helpful thread. As far as these F-mount lenses go? Is there anything else I need to worry about? I wouldn't guess a AF lens would work on this camera but what about the "AI" I keep seeing. Either AI or non AI.
>> Anonymous
Oh also while I am asking, the camera bag I found the Pentacon camera in had a little filter kit with it.

49mm Hanimex Polarizing Filter
49mm Skylight Filter
49mm Close Up +3 Filter

I'm most curious about the Close Up filter. It literally just looks like a magnifying glass. I do seem to be able to focus on closer objects when using it but. It just seems odd to me. I've never seen anyone on here talk about a close up filter.

Also Skylight filter, same as UV filter?

pre-AI lenses you shouldn't attach because it could damage the AI ring on the camera itself, but most lenses you want are AI and AI-s anyway, so there is no real need to look at pre-AI lenses.
You can mount and meter AF lenses. Without AF function for obvious reasons. but it cannot use G type lenses, as they do not have an aperture ring, thus you cannot control the aperture settings.

AI means "Automatic Indexing", this basically tells the camera what aperture setting you have selected on the lens, this it can calculate the according exposure.
AI-s is Automatic Indexing with shutter priority (hence the s), this was introduced mostly for sports or action. This is where you select the shutter speed on the body and the body will automatically chose the correct fstop on the lens when the shutter release button is pressed. basically the opposite of an AI lens. but an AI-s lens can operate in the same manor as an AI lens, also are newer.

>>115732
So an AI-s lens will function as an AI lens on my camera since it lacks Shutter priority mode. Correct?
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>115738
yep, and really, there isn't much advantage of AI-s, especially with modern cameras dont give a suff if the lens is AI or AI-s, they treat them as the same. But you can get AI for cheaper than AI-s and are normally just as good. But there are some really nice AI-s lenses out there.
So really is take your pic between AI and AI-s, as it doesn't make a difference, but dont get pre-AI (non-AI, NAI). And i'm pretty sure AI'd lenses can work (that are pre-AI modified to become AI)

>>115732
The s in AI-s has nothing to do with shutter priority. All Nikkor lenses work with shutter priority on the FA, and no AI-s lens will give shutter priority on anything newer.

AI-s refers to a slight change they made in the back of the mount that changes something to do with the timing of the aperture stopping down during exposure. It doesn't affect picture taking at all.

I know we hate Ken here, but his page is really the best when it comes to Nikkor lenses and what the letters mean.

what is the metal prong on nikon lenses for?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

For older cameras, that's how the lens communicates with the camera where the aperture is for metering purposes.

What is a normal range of apertures for a Macro lens? I think that might be what I'm gonna try to get either for the Nikon or the Pentacon. I love taking macro shots with my Fujifilm S5700 but it only goes down to 3.5 so I can't get a very shallow depth of field.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ

3.5-2.8 is what I usually see. With those you're talking about razor thin DOF though because they are true 1:1 macro lenses and that's pretty typical when working with those magnifications.

It's even worse with ones like the Canon MP-E 65 2.8 which goes up to x5 life size in its macro mode. Even for those who love a razor thin DOF normally will find it hard to work with without a lot of patience and practice.

The close focusing distance and magnifications involved make a big difference.

Also Your lens on the Fuji is only like 6.33mm, (Because with the small sensor size that 6.33mm becomes more like a 38mm lens on a 35mm film camera)

Thats why you see such huge DOF's, Not because the aperture is small.

Yeah it's really hard to use the DOF in a picture. This is about the best example of selective focus I've acheived with that camera.

I really can't wait till I can afford a DSLR so I can play with the effects of these lenses and see (relatively) immediate results instead of having to wait for developing.

I've used some similar Fuji cameras in the past. If you put it in the super macro mode and focus close you can get some nice images and DOF as far as these things go.

Soligor c/d zoom+macro 80-200mm 1:4.5 mc

I found that on eBay for under 10$ shipped. Says it is in working condition and the glass is fine. It says it fits all Nikons and is MF so I'm thinking it will fit my Nikon. Have any of you ever heard of Soligor? It sounds like a made up company from a video game. I'm just looking to spend very little to get into goofing around with different lenses. Should I look for a different one than this one or maybe just try this one and see what happens? Also it says it is a zoom/macro. Would I be better off finding a dedicated Macro? What characteristics does a zoom/macro have? I mean my Fujifilm big-zoom can do both and that I would expect but I figured a lens would be specific to one or the other, macro or zoom.

Looks like a M42 lens to me.. At least, I have the EXACT same lens as an M42 lens, and the ring that is next to the camera looks like an M42 adapter.
>> Anonymous
>>116817
Do you like it? Is it an ok lens for goofing around with? It might actually be nice if it was an M42 because it would work on both my cameras then. I have that Praktica which is M42 and then I guess since it is being sold as a lems for a Nikon it comes with a F-mount adapter.

Its more than likely made with F, M42, FD, K, etc...

If it's a M42 lens with a F-mount adapter, it will not focus to infinity on Nikons.

That ring looks more like a filter size step-up ring to me. Companies like this made their lenses in all sorts of mounts.
