So I was told something about using the high-pass filter for sharpening today--using Photoshop CS3?

Anyone care to give me a good explanation on what to expect with it? The results I had were questionable, at best.

In the mean time, enjoy this picture of my friend's cat.

Only trick I know is to duplicate the original image on a new layer, high-pass it, and set that layer to overlay. It seems to work alright in moderation, after messing with the overlay layer's opacity, but if you've got any grain the final product will look like shit. I'll see if I can give you an example.

Anyways, the trick isn't really that useful to me, so if anyone knows a better one share away.

OP here. Yeah, that was exactly how I was told to do it.

Didn't come out that well---kind of looked like HDR, as well.

Here you are, a quick demo of how it looks when I do use it, which is as subtly as possible (left is with filter, right is without). Like I said, I can't seem to do it well and tend to avoid it, but I learned about it through this article by a guy who went all-out with it and used that trick as well as a few others to turn a regular shot of a homeless person into a gritty hard-lit shot. I was pretty impressed by that, it looked really convincing, not like a shitty shop at all.

Meh. I guess I don't really see the point to it, then.

I'll stick with my Unsharp Mask for now.

Very nice cat pic. What did you use?

It's a secret. I try not to have my exif data show--just because I like to leave things a mystery.

I use 0,7px highpass filter when I post ~1000px pics to web. Sharpening is the last thing I do to a photo.

Oh and I forgot to add: when you get jaggies or halos, it's too sharp. The cat's whiskers have jaggies which look too artifical and ugly :(

smart sharpen. problem solved.

sharpening is always the last step, after resizing the image.
