I've learned more about photography in the last 6 weeks in class than the last 3 years with a camera and the interbutts. I'm majoring in mechanical engineering, but I'm trying to take photography as long as I can find time for both. It's a very time consuming class, but it's really worth it. This week I have a lecture with Shen Wei of www.shenphoto.com and a workshop with him saturday morning. My teachers are truly a wealth of knowledge and they have me thinking in directions I would have never gone on my own, mainly from forcing me to shoot tri-x with a 50mm only for the first year. http://deptart.memphis.edu/index.php?id=50,0,0,1,0,0 is our department head and a fantastic person to approach and talk to about anything photography. My teacher is really into strobist stuff and while he treats my film and prints like crap and come down hard on me, he treats me like an equal I suppose when it comes to digital and off camea flash and is more than willing to help me with it, even tho it's WAY beyond the scope of Photo 1. Seriously, half my class can't even take a pic with their cameras, let alone develop the film and make a print. He criticises me hard sometimes, and there have been days I've wanted to drop his class, but I've learned too much to stop, I needed the structured direction and ,more importantly, criticism to make me shoot like I am now.
