Hey /p/,
I know you most likely get quite a lot of threads like this, however it would be greatly appreciated if someone could give me any thoughts on this camera, the "Nikon D40x". I'm looking to buy my first DSLR, and I was drawn to this camera, however if anyone could suggest anything better for the same price range it would be great. Thanks in advance.

Yup, better off with d40 than d40x. Otherwise, if you really want that price range, go for a d80.

If you go Nikon, get the D40 rather than the D40x.

Alternately, the Canon Digital Rebel XTi is in that same price range, but it's not "better" (or worse) so much as just "different".

(The Rebel's main advantage to me is that you can buy lenses faster than f/2.8 that'll autofocus with it)

OP here,

Thanks for the advice, just curious, how come the d40 is better than the d40x?

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 will autofocus with the D40. SUCK ON IT, BIG POPPA.

It's not better, it's just cheaper, and you don't need the extra megapixels. Spend the money you save on better glass, like the aforementioned Sigma.

The D40 isn't better than the D40x, but neither is it particularly worse. The extra resolution doesn't matter that much unless you plan to make billboard size prints that you expect people to view up close.

The 3fps vs. 2.5fps rate of fire is the only real advantage the D40x has.

Your mom.

But yeah, I should've said that *Nikon* doesn't make any glass faster than f/2.8 that'll autofocus on the D40 line. I just don't tend to think much about third-party lenses, 'cause I've got more money than sense.

(And also, I'd suspect that Nikon's going to start focusing--so to speak--more heavily on lenses with the motor in the lens so they don't have to keep building bodies with motors. So this disadvantage of the D40/D40x will probably go away eventually)

(But I'm a Canon fanboy, so I chose to ignore those points)
