Get the lens. While a good flash unit is an extremely useful device, a good prime lens will allow you to take good photos in most lighting situations, not to mention lighting can be set up anywhere with a little ingenuity. Make a diffuser for your pop-up flash for the time being.

how does I do this
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
the sb-600 kinda sucks. if i had known better when i bought mine, i would have bought an sb-28 for 80 bucks less.

so, do that. a good fast lens is very handy, but it limits your shooting much more than a really good flash.

sb-600. while the 50 1.4 is "a good lens" it will not shoot in as many lighting situations as the sb-600, for starters, total darkness. Unless you like tripods and 20 second exposures.

50mm f/1.8 AND SB-600.
>> Anonymous
save your money and get the 50 1.8. I have both in my bag and don't notice a difference in sharpness. And half a stop is not enough to warrant another 200 bucks. Use the left over money to save up for an SB-800/900

i have both, i'd recommend you go for the 50mm 1.4
it serves me faaaaarrr better than that flash.
I freelance and i've used my flash 3 times in the last year, the lens just doesnt usually need that extra light, really, it's phenomenal.

OP here... what difference in shutter speed would the 1.4 give over the 1.8 in the same lighting conditions, also those people who have both could you post pictures comparing the lens?

>what should I get?

A lobotomy.

I use a D80
First lens was the 18-135. Found it pretty good, still use it today.
Bought a SB600. Lighting is more important than Lens quality imo.

Bought the Nikon 50/1.4, to soft. -> Sold & Bought 1.8. Found the focal length to close. Sold

Saving for the sigma 28/1.8
Also the Sigma 10-20 (which im currently borrowing)

surely you would have known this having used the f/1.4 before

With good lighting and a reasonable lens you can take a great photo.

With a good lens and terrible lighting you can take a sharp image of a boring or badly lit scene.

Up to you.

At the time when I was using the 1.4, I didn't do that many live gigs. Which I then became more interested in later on (after selling and buying the 1.8)

I know everyone hates ken rockwell etc.
but this is pretty much true what he says:

The only difference between this and the 50mm f/1.4 D and 50mm f/1.2 AI-s is that the faster lenses become sharper at f/2, but all are the same by f/4. The faster lenses also cost two to four times as much and have more distortion.

OP here, so basically the 1.8 and 1.4 are the same lens when stopped are f/2 or higher?

Is the build quality/sharpess better on the 1.4 or am I paying double for what basically is the 1.8 with a larger hole?
>> Anonymous
>what difference in shutter speed would the 1.4 give over the 1.8 in the same lighting conditions

if my maths are correct you get a 28.57% wider aperture which equals to arround 1.65 times faster shutter so if shooting f/1.8 @ 1/125 you will get around 1/200 when shooting f/1.4

But if your kit lense can only do f/5.6 at 50mm your shutter speed will be something like 1/15 in the same coniditons.

I think anyway, don't quote me on this.
