so anyone think that a used 20d would be a good purchase? from the looks of it.. i'm not missing out much in terms of picture quality when compared to the 40d, aside from the lower resolution.

one of the biggest deciding factors is that I can get a basically new body for like 500 bucks, cheaper then the rebel XT where I am

I don't know, I'd save up for the 40D just because I like new stuff.

I have a 30D bought on launch and it's getting old. I guess if the used 20D still has life to it it might be okay.

Then you are a consumer whore.

The 20D is a huge step up over the Rebel XT. It's a very usable camera. I had one, but didn't like a lot of little things about it. Those things weren't likely to be (and have not been) solved by any subsequent release by Canon, so I replaced it with a D200 and couldn't be more pleased.

But if it's a call between the XT, the 20D and the 40D, and you don't need the higher resolution of the 40D, then I'd go for the 20D.

That extra control wheel makes manual control a lot nicer to use.

The 20D is still an excellent camera. I love mine and will only get rid of it if it means getting a 5D.

The 40D is much better.

The 20D has a horrible grip... very uncomfortable. (The 30D corrects this, however, look at it.)

Also, the 40D has a much quieter shutter... only slightly louder than a point and shoot if used with the mirror up, like in live view mode. It's still quiet for an SLR otherwise, too.

What's the difference between the grips on the 20D and 30D? They look exactly the same.

op here.

for me.. a slightly more comfortable grip is not worth double the price.

I can get a 20d for 500 bucks, a 20d for 600-700 and a 40d for 1000+.

personally, i've used a 20d and was rather pleased with it. All I was really asking is if there was some fancy feature/upgrade that I would be missing out on the 40d. For example, a more roust shutter mechanism that can stand more releases then the 20d could would be something i'm looking for. I don't care how new and shiny my camera is, I want to make the most out of my money and get something that takes me pretty pictures. The rebel XT i'd been borrowing doesn't cut the cheese. besides, it's too small in my hands.

From the 30D up, it's 100,000 actuations. The 20D is only 50,000 or less, I don't remember.

There's really little difference from the ***D to **D in terms of image quality.

Sorry; my mistake. I have no first-hand experience with the 30 and my memory of pictures I'd seen of it got crossed.

>>97588
Just those two things. It handles poorly because of the grip; it's just a slab of body sticking out, with no real molding at all on it. The few times I had my hands on one, I spent half of it cursing how bad the thing felt to me.

And if you're doing any sort of candid photography, a quieter shutter is a huge advantage. If you're sticking to landscapes and noncandid portraiture, or stuff like that, it'll be fine. Why do you think people shell out $5,000 for Leicas?

The 40D is a much better camera for those two reasons; the only thing -wrong- with the 20D is the grip. The shutter sound on the 20D isn't bad, but the shutter sound on the 40D is really good.

Yeah, doesn't the XTi have the same sensor as the 20D? Or one of the x0D models?

You're the only person I've ever heard complain about the 20D grip.

>>97588I don't suppose you'd mind sharing what you didn't like about the 20d?

-no support for manual lenses, high prices and iffy build quality on current AF primes (not specific to the 20D, but to Canon in general)
-poor viewfinder, especially for manual focusing
-poor control layout
-too many settings required navigating menus on the LCD
-I'm not sure if the viewfinder was miscalibrated or the sensor installed somewhat crooked or what, but all of my photos required rotation 0.5 degrees counterclockwise to match what I saw in the finder. This is probably something I could have had fixed under warranty, but it took me so long to decide it wasn't just my imagination that by then I had already decided to replace the camera because of other reasons.

The 20D was my first DSLR and also my first new 35mm-type camera in a very long time and I just found that I didn't really like the way Canon went with their ergonomics. Overall I think it's just issues of personal preference which is why I still recommend the 20D to people who aren't bothered by Canon's DSLR ergonomics.

I do think, however, that the ergonomics on the 20D are much better than the Rebel. The Rebel is so bad I wouldn't even consider using one. Also, I think the grip on the 20D was perfectly fine.

after all it's all about the personal preference of handling. after all, i's just a tool, right?
