Hi, I'm looking for a new camera. I can't afford to go over $400 and I want the best digital camera I can get.

Any suggestions?

I'll be back in a few hours to look. If this thread dies I'll re post it. (On lunch break right now.)

400 bucks might get you a D40 kit.

Any of the entry level SLRs, used. Nikon D40, Canon Rebel XT/350D, Sony Alpha A100, Pentax K100D, etc.

QFT. While I haven't shot with one, they are what I'd get if I was shopping for an entry-level DSLR: the only ones made with two control dials, and a higher viewfinder magnification than any other crop DSLR except the Kx0D series, which they tie.

without a lens of course. unless you are willing to chance a used one.

One doesn't really chance much by buying a used lens. KEH rates conservatively, eBay has pictures, and local camera shops you can actually see the lens yourself.

OP here - Thanks for the input. I'm looking up the camera's suggested so far and looking at what I like more for what I will be using it for.

If you're having trouble searching for the *ists (unsurprising), check http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Pentax/.
