It isn't that you should necessarily avoid these things, just realize that it is going to significantly alter the color in your photograph if you aren't paying attention.
Relative to your photo: I would have moved closer to your subject and opened the apeture as much as possible. There are three major things I see wrong here, one is that the background is too much in focus and draws away from your subject. Second, the menu/noteboard over the left shoulder is very distracting. Next, the foreground lighting. Due to the skin tones, the lighting, and your background, the face of your subject is washing out.
Outside, lighter color clothing, more neutral background (a tree, lawn, shrub,) and more light in the foreground.
