Seconding D90. I fucking love mine. I managed to hunt one down during the initial pre-release sales run last month, but I hear the "real" release date is pushed back to October.

D40 and D60 are gimped versions of the older D50; the D60 does have a newer, higher-resolution sensor, but it's not worth losing the ability to effectively work with most good lenses.

Nikon has always done autofocus by having the focus motor in the body, but to cut costs, they stopped putting it in their bottom-line DSLR, meaning now only lenses with their own motors, almost all of which are expensive, shit, or of limited use, will autofocus.

Normally this wouldn't matter, because you could just manually focus, but again to be cheap bastards and because few people care they make their entry-level cameras with crap viewfinders that aren't really suited.

The D80 really is a better choice all around over even the D50 though: most people will work with the body and controls better, the viewfinder is good, etc. etc. It's worth the extra cash if you have it.

Get a 28mm f/2.8 and a 50mm f/1.8 and you'll have a pretty versatile, good, cheap lens set to get started out with. Note these lenses don't have focus motors, and so won't autofocus on the 40 or 60.
