Im thinking of buying my first dslr from blacks, are they any good as far as price, quality and service go?
>> Anonymous
Never buy from blacks. It will probably be stolen. I had that happen with my bike.
>> Anonymous
Blacks is probably the worst photo store I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. Also, their prices are terrible. Avoid.

Where does anon suggest buying stuff then? Im looking at a d80 with 18-70mm and 4gb sd for starters
>> Anonymous
Ugh Blacks is the worst photography store EVER. Well where the fuck do you live? that might help someone give you advice
>> Anonymous
Etobicoke area, 5 minutes walk to the subway, so somewhere accessible via ttc would be awesome. I saw the blacks downtown near yonge and dundas this afternoon, and that's why i tried asking /p/
>> Anonymous
I applied for a job and they didn't hire me cause I was too quiet in the interview.

Then they hired another guy instead. When I went into the store next, I asked him:

"My sister has a camera with a fixed aperture of f/8 and a shutter of like 1/250...what film should she buy to take pictures mostly outside, some indoors without flash?"

he goes "uh, color"

Don't buy from Black's. They're good for dropping off your grandma's roll of film, picking up cheapo frames when they're on sale, and not much else.

Haha! YOU MAKE ME LAUGH! YOU DO! YOU REALLY DO! HAHA! Thats so funny when you said "My sister has a camera with a fixed aperture of f/8 and a shutter of like 1/250...what film should she buy to take pictures mostly outside, some indoors without flash?"

Lol what kind of stupid question is that, HEY GUYS I TAKE PICS WITH MY F8 MIRROR LENS INDOORS,.
>> Anonymous
For online: B&H Photo, Adorama, KEH
>> Anonymous
>>133597

It's not a mirror lens, she has one of those Lomo fisheye cameras. Valid question that anyone could have asked him, except that I gave him all the info that he otherwise would have needed to figure out when they said "what film do I need for THIS CAMERA"
>> Anonymous

Holga

>>133633

No, this. It's a Lomo but not a Holga.
>> Anonymous
>>133635
Ahh knowing that then that brings up 3 real points
1. LEARN EXPOSURE, OUTDOORS IN THE DAY =/= INDOORS WITH NO FLASH, ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE
2. Disown your sister.
3. That camera shop dude knows photography better then you, Color film is the crux of lomo style camera's, Shitty colors and vignetting is the main selling point of the "lomo" style.
>> Anonymous
So it turns out you failed the interview because you are a clueless moron and the other guy knows his stuff. The quiet thing was just a nice way of putting it to avoid hurting your feelings, you smug dipshit.
>> Anonymous
>>133638

I failed the interview because I barely talked during it, because I was a dead quiet socially awkward loser in high school. Being introverted =/= selling cameras.

Actually, ASA 200 would be only about 1/3 stop overexposed outside (well within the latitude of the film), and only about two stops under indoors, which they could (and do) compensate for at a place like Black's.

zomg.

I think you're vastly overestimating the amount of light indoors. Straight out of the camera, f/8 1/250th right next to a window giving me bright sunlight is pretty much black. I had to push more like 5 or 6 stops to get something usably bright, and as you can see (and remember, this is ISO200 on an APS-C sensor) it brings out every single bit of noise available.

>>133857

That amount of noise is pretty much consistent with the grain you see from Black's if they compensated for underexposure. I may have been off in the number of stops, but the basic numbers were right.

Also keep in mind that film has a lot more exposure latitude than digital.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>133877
Perhaps, but also keep in mind that that was directly in front of a bright window. That's about as bright as indoor lighting ever gets.

Even with film's exposure latitude and range, in normal indoor lighting, there's just not going to be enough exposure to do anything with it.
>> Anonymous
>>133877
That was BEST case scenario, quit trying to defend a retarded assumption.
Someone take your camera, set it to F8, 1/250 and ISO 200, and walk around and take pics outside and indoors, and you will see why "one film" will not do.
>> Anonymous
>>133917

Fuck off. This isn't worth arguing any more.

End of story is, don't buy things from Black's.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
     File :-(, x)
>>133917
Yep.

Here's one from not right next to the bright window. Pushed hard from the RAW in post.

Again, this is ISO200 with an APS sensor. And the Common Wisdom (though I don't really know what the truth of that is) is that digital SLR noise is better than grain on color film at equivalent ISO.

not reading the thread to see what you're buying

but Canon Canada honors the warranty if you buy it from the states, doesn't matter, it's the same thing. just don't get the items tagged imported

i'm a canadafag too and buy from B&H only since even after shipping and taxes, it's still cheaper than buying local. screw the little guy, i'll pay those jews in new york

>> Anonymous
>>134749

D60? Yes, a ton already. When i went to pmall this saturday, aden's said that they had em up since wednesday.

And yeah, delay from announcement to being available is 1-1 and 1/2 months, as shown when the d80 was announced, and so was the case when the d60 was announced (Jan29-Feb27). Yes, im a number geek.

update: http://www.merklecamera.com/products.html#DHE:Catalog:Line:712:Page:1:SortOn:brand:Dept:5

looks like even merkle doesnt have d80s with 18-70mms anymore.

weird.
>> Anonymous
nikon is probably phasing that kit out for the 18-55 VR since it's cheaper

if people really want the 18-70, they'll buy it separately

and there's no indication that nikon will be replacing the d80 anytime soon

enjoy waiting for a brand new camera that will make your pictures better than you could've done with a d80

BUT i'm also lucky, my friend runs a camera store, and i get pretty close to cost on everything I buy (Which isn't much lol, Cost still can't beat most used prices I manage to find)

>> Anonymous

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

The warranty comes from the manufacturer, not the store (although the store might pressure you into buying an "extended" warranty from them).

Good online stores are adorama.com, bhphotovideo.com, and keh.com

>>135917

if i buy online though, would the canadian manufacturers still honor it?
>> Anonymous

Depends. Canon Canada will honour a US-bought warranty, no problem. Nikon Canada will not, but Nikon USA will accept warranty work from Canada, meaning you just have to ship it to El Segundo or Melville instead of Vancouver.
