Hey there /p/. What do you guys think of the Nikon D60 as a first DSLR?
>>
Skip it. D80's are on closeout and the D200 is not much more than that.

If you don't want to spend more money, get a D40 instead.

Get the D40, unless if you plan to make crazy huge prints. They are too alike to spend the extra 200 bucks. Take that money and get another lens or a flash.

Sorry, perhaps I should have mentioned that I'm in England, so the prices are probably going to be quite different.

A D60 with standard kit lens is around £350.
A D80 with standard kit lens is around £600.
A D40 with standard kit lens is around £260.

I probably won't be "upgrading" for a very long time, so I'd like something that would last me for quite a while. Like, buy a new lens or two sometime later, but keep the body for a good while. So would getting the D60 be a good idea if I'm going to be using it probably for at least a couple of years?

If that is the case then i would bite the quid and get the D80. The image quality is awsome and you can use most of Nikons lenses. You miss out on some great lenses with the D40 and D60...

Get the D40 if you don't have the money, get the D80 if you do. The D80 will drop even more when the D90 hits in the next couple weeks, so wait till the end of the month for clearance prices.

It'll be a couple of months until I get one anyway, I'm just looking for general opinions at the moment. I don't suppose you fancy speculating on how much the D80 will drop in price?

25% or so. We're dropping the body from $800 to $600, the 18-55 and 18-135 still being $100 and $200 extra respectively. But when it's gone, it's gone, so get it as soon as it drops.

any chance the D60 will drop too?

I would recommend that you go with the D80 then start investing in some quality glass.
The move to Pro/Prosumer will be smoother that way.
