The D3 is awesome and great fun to use, but unless you're getting paid to take photos it's very hard to justify spending that much.

I bought a D300 a couple of days ago and I'm very happy with it.

I'd recommend it plus the 18 - 200 and 17 - 55 Nikkor lenses.

suggesting 18-200 = opinion instant fail

Nikon D80.

Then use the remaining money to bribe impressionable young women into taking off their clothing for you.

LOOK GUYS

HE'S GOT ENOUGH MONEY FOR A D3

SO LET HIM BUY THE MOTHERFUCKING D3

AND HE CAN POST PICTURES OF IT HERE OKAY?

Hating on the 18-200 because it's cool to do so = opinion instant fail.

Please point me in the direction of a better lens with the same focal range for that price or less and I might change my mind.

There isn't one. The argument against it isn't that there are better alternatives in the wide-to-tele space. The argument against it is that its poor quality is an unacceptable tradeoff for the superzoom range.

The 18-55 VR probably has better quality over the 18-55 range, and the 55-200 VR probably has better quality over the 55-200 range, and you can get 'em both for half the price of the 18-200.

(I might be pulling the relative quality out of my ass. I'm a canonfag, so I've only actually ever paid attention to the quality of Canon lenses, and really precious little attention to that too)
>> BurtGummer
Ive got a D80 + 18-135mm AND a 70-200mm.

....I should of opted for the 300 shouldnt I...

but SO much money with VR...

Nikkor 135mm DC f/2

While everyone has been bickering about shit, might I make some reasonable recommendations?

Camera: D3. Aim High.

50mm f/1.4: This is an awesome lens, esp. on a Full Frame.

14-24mm f/2.8: Good wide angle zoom.

24-70mm f/2.8: More coverage.

70-200mm f/2.8: And that's the complete kit.

3 lens to cover everything for 14mm-200mm with good fast glass. And a nifty fifty to be the cherry on top.

You could also forgo the D3 and just get the D300 and the same glass and be able to actually get all that glass.

Well, that's my dream kit, right there. Except make the 50 f/1.4 a 50 f/1.2 Ai.

>50mm f/1.4: This is an awesome lens, esp. on a crop sensor.

fixed. the 85 1.4 retails for about a grand, while the 50 1.4 gives nearly the same focal length for about 700 bucks less.

>>138055
uh 50 and 85 are pretty different on crop, champ
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
17-55 + D3 = fail...

it's a dx lens

17-55 + D300 = AWESOME

24-70 + D3 = Also Awesome.

Honestly though, grab the D300 and spend more money on accessories like lighting. IT's honesly more than enough unless you make an income from photography, even then the D300 is still enough.

>>138114
He's saying that the 50/1.4 is more especially awesome on crop than it is on full-frame because it gives you the field of view and aperture that you previously had to pay for the 85/1.4 for on full frame.

17-50 tamron, then?
>> Anonymous
>>138171
Just make sure you get a good one. Tamron's QC isn't as bad as Sigma's, but still fails sometimes.

>>138170
Aperture, yes. Depth of field, sadly no.

Sigma DP1

and remember to tell /p/ how awesome it is
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

The DoF difference between the 50/1.4 on a crop and the 85/1.4 on full frame shouldn't be all *that* much.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>138173
I got a so-so copy my first time, traded it in, got a stellar copy. Just shoot a ton with it your first day, and if it's anything less than critically sharp wide-open, take it back.
>> Anonymous
>>138186
To get the equivalent FoV and DoF, you have to multiply both focal length and aperture number by the crop factor; thus, 50/1.4 = 75/2.1, and there's quite a bit of difference between f/1.4 and f/2. (The smallest DoF you can get from a 85/1.4 lens on film is so small, though, that it's not often useful)

op here will probably get D300 :3 was planning on it anyways.

you guys are all talking about the 17-55 so ill look into getting that aswell as maybe a laptop for myself thanks /p/
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>138535
Tamron 17-50 will save you a ton of money for an arguably better lens
