Hey /p/ I'm thinking of getting a Fish eye lens for my Nikon D40x...would a simple 40.00 eBay one serve me well for some simple fish eye shots?

The optical quality on those fisheye converters is usually pretty bad. It would depend on exactly what you want to achieve.

PROTIP: Fisheye is overused and generally rubbish. So long as you dont do the same things as EVERYONE else (ps skateboarders)

Also you should have got the D40 so you could afford a real fisheye :P

Add these two comments together.

I.e., the fisheye converter is going to suck, but fisheye in general is going to suck, so better to spend $40 on the cheap one than the hundreds that a real fisheye lens will cost you to find out that it's a lame effect that gets old quickly.

i use my fisheye all the time to photograph meteor activity.
when you dont know where the action is going to happen, the best way to capture it is to just photograph everything

All this hate on fisheyes.

I don't know if this convertor would do anything, but Michael Reichmann endorses fisheye lenses, at least, as a way of (with distortion correction on the computer) getting superwide angles really cheap.

Not that Reichmann has to worry about if anything is cheap or not.

except its pretty much guaranteed that the fisheye wouldnt be manipulated to get a nondistorted superwide shot but instead as a fisheye for the hip, cool, totally unique perspective.

The photographers staff at my art school are very good people and they use old nikons and lend them out and they have a screw on they say they are very good

since you have a crop camera, consider getting one of those cheap russian ones (search on ebay for peleng)

I use a 11-18 for most of my action shots (one above was my 50 prime cause i knew wat was goin on).

I would expect getting a sense of timing, practicing and a wide lense will get you better more useable shots for action. Plus getting a wide lense over a fish lense will let you use it for other shots.

No. Get a cheap Lomo fisheye if you want to play around with the effect, but honestly it's about as overdone as the photoshop lens flare filter. There's lots of potential when using a fisheye lens, but honestly, and this isn't a knock against you, you're probably not a good enough photographer to make a fisheye lens worth your while. It's not worth it for most people. If you want to experiment with a funky effect lens, get a Lensbaby. They're cheap and awesome.
