Reporters + straight flash Anonymous
What's with reporters and front on flash?

If you're chasing down some person on the street, paparazzi style, I can see it because you want the most range possible.

But what's with people using the flash straight on in stuff like press conferences when you're clearly inside and you're in the press pit no more than 5 ft away from the subjects.

Why not bounce it from the ceiling or some place, and if there's no place to bounce, they've invented bounce cards for that.

So why are they firing it straight at the people?

just going to guess that "never say ba-ba when ba will do"

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that expression.

But I'm guessing the gist of it means: I'll leave it that way in case shit happens?

don't make things for complicated when they don't have to be.

I learned this about ten years ago from a photojournalist when I was interning at a newspaper, and still use it all the time. It's cheap, easy, and still works better than any of the other light-modifying devices I've tried.

I have a slightly upgraded version though, I took an index card sized piece of plastic and stuck some adhesive velcro to that and the flash, so I can readily move and adjust it with one hand.

whatever, DIRECT flash can be great sometimes, and bounce can be fucking awful sometimes.

no one said reporters or paparazzi have to be amazing photographers. who gives a shit how press conference photos look?

op's photo shows photographers who are likely far away from their subject and need to flash power. . show a photo of someone using direct flash at five feet at a press conference and your question will make sense. i've never seen it. i don't go to press conferences.

also, these photographers are homeless men.

Its funny because i use that exact same thing too.

Most of the time even playing cards are good enough for bouncing flash.

Last time i was shooting at a bar people kept asking whats up with the weird piece of paper on top of my flash.

I love bouncing flashes of a card not just because it gives a clean diffused light but also because it sets me apart from the D40 and 400D pro-wannabe fags with their full front or pop up flash. It feels nice when they ask me what it is and I say something along the lines of "secret photography technique" and have better photos to show it. It's even better if I see them again trying to do it wrong. Ohh yess... retribution.

I found buisness cards work quite well as bounce cards if you dont have anything better on you.

Also using flashes sucks.

Using flash sucks? You said before that when you "take" club photos you use flash at iso 400... Lie?

I like to bounce it off the roof and wall mostly. It is easy enough that I can give my camera to other people to take the photo.
