hey /p/hilm developers. as you might remember, i just got a canonet QL19 and my ql17 just arrived on thurs and the cost of paying someone to develop my film is obscene so im gonna do it myself.

so, in that case, what exactly do i need? bear in mind ove never done it before, so its from scratch. i have a ~rough~ idea of what chemicals i need, and one of those film developing tanks/jar things but anything else that essential/cheap enough to be worthwhile?
also, any pages you reccomend i read?
heres where ill prob source my chemicals from so gimme a yell what ill need from here if poss?

thanks-

when i was at Wintec i would 'borrow' their chemicals.
we used:
Developer: Kodak D-76
Fixer: Kodak Fixer
Stop bath: Kodak Indicator Stop Bath (changes colour when depleted)
Finishing: Kodak PHOTO-FLO

sweet, i shouldve mentioned itll be used for b/w photography, prob not the c41 process? does it take different chems to do that "true b/w" film?

to develop "true b/w" is simple, just use the chemicals (or similar) that i've listed in>>136830

to do C-41 at home is a lot more tricky! really not worth it especially if you've never done developing before. C-41 chemicals are a lot more poisons than b/w chemicals and the process is many more steps and requires accurate temperature control, unlike b/w process witch is much more forgiving.
Just take your c-41 film to your local at get it developed in 15mins for like 6 bux, take home and scan yourself (if you have a decent scanner).

ah sweet, ive always thought/heard/been told that b/w is a lot harder to do than c-41 b/w so guess thats fuckin sweet for me :)

what sort of amounts of each would be a start? and any good detailed pages on exact amounts/times/temps etc?

follow the instructions of the film packet (or data sheet of the particular film) for the developing times, ratios and temperatures.
Follow the instructions on the chemicals for the popper mixing ratios.
and Follow the instructions on the developing tank for the right amount of developer/fixer to use.
Buy a thermometer, some measuring jogs and some 5L bottles (to store the solutions)
I'm going out for dinner now farken hungry.

At a minimum you need a film tank with reel, a graduated cylinder for measuring chemicals, some hangers or clips to hang drying film, a thermometer, a stopwatch or timer, developer, fixer, and access to running water.

For chemistry I would recommend D-76 or Ilford Ilfosol S. D-76 is a general purpose developer that is cheap and easy to find just about anywhere. Ilfosol is a one shot developer that is good if you do small batches and/or process infrequently.

For fixer, either Kodak or Ilford rapid fixers. I prefer Ilford because it comes as a liquid concentrate rather than a powder, so I can mix it up in smaller quantities more easily.

You can use water as your stop bath, it works just as well and will save the hassle and expense of using a prepared stop bath.

It's not a bad idea to use a wetting agent on your final rinse, but it's not necessary. It will help prevent water spotting and is very cheap. That would be Kodak Photo-Flo or any number of other brands that are the same thing.

All of those are for standard B&W processing. Color processing, of any type, is significantly more difficult and unless you're doing a lot of film it's not cost effective. It's definitely best to start with B&W and become proficient before you decide if you want to try color.

As far as a source, start with your local camera shop. Online there is B&H Photo, Adorama, and Freestyle Photographic.

What you've probably heard is that C41 is easier because you can take it down to any drugstore and have it developed in an hour. Much harder to do at home.

Look around on Ilford's site, they have an excellent PDF tutorial.

you can get dark room sets for like 100$ on craig's list if you shop around

I tried autocorrecting to that, but it still wasn't comprehensible. I.e.,:
1. If it's traditional B&W film, why would you be trying to get it developed in C41?
2. If you're trying to cross-process B&W in C41, why would they charge you more? I'm guessing they'd either just refuse to do it or they wouldn't notice at all.
3. If it's chromogenic B&W (I.e., designed to be C41 processed), why would it cost more? C41's C41.
4. I don't get the "Is it just me". Is he really suspecting that the stores are charging him personally more?

It's really just a trainwreck of a question, is my point.
