A friend of mine works for Canon, and gets new cameras for pretty cheap.

So, what is ya'lls opinion on the Canon 40D? I'm thinking about getting one, and was wondering if any of you had any real reasons not to get one.

Probably what the best Canon has to offer for now in the 'prosumer' segment. It's got all the new goodies.

Oh, almost forgot. Here's a sample of the image quality that I would be upgrading from.

That's not really something to go by. All else being equal, the image quality will be the same from the 400D to the 1D.

Well, minus noise and dynamic range I guess.

Eh, sorry. It's one of the only shots from that camera I have on my computer (the SLR I've been using is an old analog).

Do you know if the lens that comes with the kit (EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens) is worth it, or should I just buy the Body and get a separate lens?

That lens is stupid on a 40D. Get something like the Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS or Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8
