sorry, but this is the truth

worst pose and composition and lighting i have ever seen on an "actually trying for a generic portrait shot" here on /p/

Here is what this picture says to me:

"I've got a girl. I've got a guitar. I've got a camera. Hey, girl, hold this guitar while I make clicky-clicky with the camera."

It is painfully boring and generic. I mean, does she even know how to play the guitar? If she does, take some shots of her actually playing. If she doesn't, don't fucking pose her with a guitar.

fair enough, and composition sure. but i dont see whats so bad with the lighting, what could have been improved with it?

What is this a senior picture

It looks like she squeezed into a passphoto booth.

the nose shadow is driving me crazy.
literally insane.

the lighting on the face is uneven and unattractive. it is really harsh on her hand which just distracts from the face.

that is actually helpful. thank you

the biggest problem is the lighting.. by far.

the composition is actually fine, nothing terribly wrong with it :]
go for a more natural light.. like that 5pm light, you know what i mean ;]

after all, you're not a bad photographer at all judging from your gallery.. and seem to have a good understanding of lighting.
but in my opinion your portraits really do need some work since they pale in comparison to your other shots.
try to make them more dramatic in various ways (in this case, lighting)
