Hi, /p/.

I'm an amateur and I want to purchase a more or less general purpose or walk around lens for my Canon Rebel K2. Right now, I only own a 50mm f/1.8 prime that's just terrific. I want something that has zoom capabilities, maybe having a slight emphasis on the wider end.

Right now, I'm considering the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5. The only misgiving I have is that I wish it were a bit faster (f/2.8?). Any cheap third party recommendation is fine too.

I have the Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5. It's got a bit more in the wide end which is nice and can be picked up used for around $200. There's also the Sigma and Tamron f/2.8's that are around $450.

How cheap is cheap?

How cheap is cheap? The EF-S 17-85 IS can be had for around $500, and looks like a fantastic all-rounder. To be fair, I have not had the privilege of using it, but the range of focal lengths covered and the inclusion of IS make it pretty tempting.

He's asking about a Rebel K2, which is a film SLR, which means it can't use an EF-S lens.

For any f/3.5, I'd like to pay about 2 or 300. If at f/2.8, a bit more than that of course. I'm even thinking about purchasing an adapter for the FD mount ontop of another lens as long as it has good optics (even though I'll have to use MF all the time).

TL;DR: Don't get an adapter to use FD lenses on an EOS body.

If you really want to buy cheap, manual-focus glass, you'd be better off getting an adapter for something like M42 instead.
