/p/, I'm in the market for a new camera. I have the Canon S2IS (got it a few years ago) and it's great for everything but everyday use.

I'm looking into a few alternatives (a good point and shoot with good battery life) and the SD800 or SD1000 (both Canon) have caught my eye.

The SD1000 is considerably cheaper, but not as good as the 800. Any suggestions? I'm leaning towards spending less, but I wouldn't mind spending some extra for quality.

Under 250 would be great.

SD800 has IS and a wider lens, both of which actually make A LOT of difference when shooting indoors.

The sd series lacks manual controls. They also use the tiny sensors.

Fuji f50fd has a larger sensor and manual controls. Truly a noticable gain in quality, image wise.

Its bigger, but not to big to pocket. 1/5 of an inch bigger in every direction and one oz more. Usable ISO 800.

Or you can find a fuji f30 or f31... get that... though they are probably selling for more than the new ones.

With Fuji, you have to choose between usable ISO 800 and image stabilization, because the newest ones suck at high ISOs just like canons.

I really don't need manual controls. I just want a good camera for any situation.

The S2IS covers most manual settings (I believe) so I can use that for some situations.

You don't need manual controls? The SD1000 was made for you. Get it.

Or better yet, get a cell phone with a camera.

I'm just saying I rarely use the manual settings to begin with. I haven't actively done that since my photo class 2 years ago (using old Nikon cameras).

I wouldn't mind having the option available, I just want a good camera.
