How do you go about finding interesting locations like abandoned buildings and the like?
Do you drive around and go "hey that looks cool" or do you research beforehand? If so, how?
Question mark?

Shit picture related, obvious example of boring shitty place as mentioned above.

I find most of my locations on accident, but lately it's just a matter of keeping an eye out. Book a shoot in the area, then i get to the shoot an hour early and scout things out (light, etc).

Other than that ? I just drive around and end up cool places :)

Just keep an eye out. Take walks, drive or bike around. It's easier then you think.
But keep in mind, boring places do not exist. It's just because it's not new to you. It's the picture that makes it look boring or not. It's a much bigger challenge to make great pictures in your neighborhoud, then to find new locations each time. You'll learn much more from it. Also, as said before, cut the fuck down on the shopping. OP picture could've been pretty nice, bit is heavily overshopped.

Also a "boring" location might be amazing with the right lighting. So yeah, keep your eyes open.

It's my understanding that most of the places she uses, she's at least passing familiar with.

I know my sites before i even book the thing, FYI :P I'm just saying to pick an initial spot, then scout it out in more detail to determine which places you want to take the model ahead of time.

*he

anyway, yea.. most places i shoot ARE places i'm pretty familiar with.
however.. when i did that shoot with that chick with the white hair, i kinda fucked up
i wanted to do the whole thing on several busy street locations in chinatown, but that ended up failing hard.
in every FRIGGEN picture every single person would either stare at me on her. every. single. person.
and that sucked because i had no backup plan being the noob i am. scouting the area i would've had several locations that would go better with her look.
instead i just walked around for 2 minutes and noticed some empty looking alleyway and did the rest of the shoot there

i have much to learn. :]
had i done what liska suggests here that would never have happened

Just pick a direction and walk in it. Even if you've lived in a place all your life you can still find something interesting. Back in october myself and a friend went to check out a local asylum to get some texture shots, neither of us knew if it was actually abandoned or not ( it very much isnt, has a helicopter pad outside and everything) and in the process we found an entire derelict church. Didnt manage to get any good 'photo' photos, but it was still a nice find, and would have been awesome to go to in the summer.

shame they knocked it down over xmas :(
