sup /p/
i've been shooting 35mm and large format for about 10 years, and been thinking about going to digital. i was looking up the specs on the canon 30d and 40d, and there doesn't really seem to be THAT much of a difference. yeah, the 40d has more megapixels (by 2, big deal), can shoot 1 more picture per second (whoop de doo), and some insignificant WB changes.

but all in all, is the 40d THAT much better of a camera?

40d +'s:

buffer size is way better
like view on the lcd
.5" bigger lcd
wireless transfer

i don't care about the wireless transfer or live view, as i will never use it. the buffer size isn't a huge deal to me, because i'm not shooting continuous shots. and the lcd size isn't that significant. you still can't see shit on a 3" screen.

I've found that live view is nicer than I had expected it would be. But yeah, not so much that it really justifies the cost over the 30D.

the price difference is insane in used models. it seems to be around a $500 difference. which is why i was wondering what the huge difference in cameras are.

my friend has the sony a300 dslr with adjustable positioning of the liveview (in picture). i have borrowed his camera, and the liveview, although a nice feature, is just something i wouldn't use. especially in bright outdoor shots, as well as crazy lighted shots, it is a pain in the ass to see anyway, so i use the viewfinder.

live view would be more like icing on the cake, not the cake itself. There are times where it can be useful (on the a300 with the tilted screen) so you can shoot higher or lower, or an awkward position. But how many times have you said to yourself " I reall wish I could get a lower angle but I don't want to lay/kneel down in that pile of mud, I wish I could shoot from my waist and have a half-assed chance of getting a good composition."

well those are factors that make the liveview on the a300 nice. but the tilting screen isn't on the 40d, so that is the main reason the liveview has no significance to me on it. if the liveview on the 40d was like the one on the a300, then there would be some pull

weather seals
14-bit
digic iii
dust reduction
cross type af on all 9 points
center point is f/2.8 enabled
better viewfinder
interchangeable focus screens

if you don't care about any of that, just get a 30d and stop trying to convince us

Still helpful. E.g., if you're shooting something right down on ground level, you could get down on your belly and look through the viewfinder or you could get down on your knees and look at the LCD. Also, shooting over people's heads. Can't see the screen as well as if it were tilty, but you can still see it better than a viewfinder that's now two feet above your head.

Example: Used live view to get this shot. I sure as hell didn't want to get down on my belly next to that swarm.

ritzcamera.com is selling Canon's remaining stock of the 30D for $700 right now. Not bad for a brand new body complete with a manufacturer's waranty. The extra $200-300 that you'd spend on a 40D could go toward some nicer glass.

While I normally hate Ritz Camera, that's one good deal.

the 10 megapixels is important if you're looking to sell. Image libraries don't usally take less and for publications they need to be able to print at A4 at 300dpi.

Noise control is great, viewfinder is bright. The screen size is an advantage. However all the new presets and software isn't that big a deal if you shoot in RAW.
