don't bother with the viewfinder. it'll black out. instead, treat your camera like a shotgun. hold it out a few feet from you and follow the car or whatever else with your whole arm, and your waist.tripods help a lot, too.
Set your camera to Shutter priority and set the shutter speed to 1/2 - 1/8 secthe main rule is that the subject needs to be coming by directly from left to right or right to left.. there can be no moving away or toward you unless youre gonna be doing some crazy maneuvers to pan.that said, as they come by follow them in your viewfinder then press the shutter release just BEFORE they get perpendicular to you..The idea is for the shutter to be open as they are going by you so thats why you need the slower shutter speed. Aside from that, lots of practice is good.
