hey /p/ and vincent

im asking for your help.
i really want to get a dslr, i know i want nikon. but i cant decide for the d70's or d200.
d200 owns it in every way but it alot more expensive.

in aus, d200 -$1000 on average. maybe a lil cheaper.

d70s $500 and maybe sometimes more.

im talking about bodies, which do i go for!?
opinions on bothe ect would be greatly appreciated~

Take a bag of six inch nails and a foot thick block of hardwood to the camera store. Whatever camera you can hammer the nails flat into the wood with is the one you want to buy.
>> Anonymous
haha thanks anon!

i think the d70s and d200 are discontinued models! :P

d70
>> Anonymous
why the d70?
>>
get something you can afford.

if youre not into that, i'd reccomend the D3

also unsharp mask vignette etc.
>> Anonymous
Because you are asking /p/ for advice and that tells me that you have no clue about cameras. Just trying to help you save some money.
>> Anonymous
The D200's build quality is better and it meters with older lenses. If you don't need these features, you might as well go for the D70s.

Why Nikon btw?
>> Anonymous
>>206058
i have tried out canon and it feels so cheap and plastic i cant describe it haha and when i tried out nikon, it felt like i was holding a real camera! + all those delicious fast lenses.
>> Anonymous
so... is "Josef Fritzl is Australian" some sort of meme? or do people really think he's Australian?
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>206092
Both companies offer "delicious fast lenses" but they'll probably be out of your reach for some time.

Try some of Canon's higher end models - the 30D and 40D may be unplasticky enough for your taste.
>> Anonymous
>>206100
i actully looked into the 30D and it was just the whole range of canons lenses and products that confuse me, nikons cataloge and products are eay to understand what goes with what and what works well, with canon i feel lost!

>>206058

For the money i'd recommend the D200 over the D70s.

More rugged, better sensor performance, ability to meter with AF-I lenses.

Look overseas too, or second hand.

I'm an Ausfag too.
>> Anonymous
>>206110
nice to meet you jeremo,

i find cameras here are alot cheaper haha
than us.

melb fag?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
nah mate Sydney Poof

Cheaper here? No way mate.

The states are by far the cheapest. I buy all my shit there.

Cheapest place i could find for the D300 was 2300 bought it from B&H in NYC for about 1750.

The aussie dollar is up so it's really good at the moment.
>>
im a sydfag and i think cameras are overpriced here considering the dollar and its current state.
if you're interested in warranty, dont buy imports, buy from a genuine nikon dealer.
>> Anonymous
>>206112
ebays not bad bud, my mate got the d300 with 18-200 vr for $2150 only 500 clicks.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>206115

Don't trust ebay, ever since i saw the guy who thought he bought a D3 but got a box of phone books and a disposable :D

I hate the 18-200 VR, full of fail and AIDS, god that was the worst purchase i've ever made... and having that on the D300 is just...
>> TheGeneral !m7n7x2Yyfo
>>206116
so what'd you do with the 18-200? sell it?

I have the Sigma counterpart and it's performed just peachy. what were the problems with the 18-200 VR?
>> Anonymous
jeremo i like you. were going to be best of friends, ^-^

a disposable and a box of books is pretty rad,
not quite $5,000 worth.

has some cheap gear on there but everythings so expensive these dayss.

SHITs SO CASH
>>
>>206119
im guessing you're OP...
so what camera have you settled on?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>206118

I shat on the 18-200 then beat up its family infront of it then shat on its family.

... yeah i sold it. Got the 17-55 instead.

There wasn't anything right with it, horrible CA, zoom creep, softness beyond 135mm and the zoom ring melted off when i was in Shanghai for summer... though that last one can't be strictly balmed on the lens and Nikon shanghai gave me a new one for 50 cents... LOL

>>206119

LOL, you either hate me or... hate me more really. Not fussed about it.

Check out B&H, though if you buy anything over 1000 dollars you want it delivered by FedEx, with UPS you're GUARANTEED to get stamp duty. I got my old man to grab it for me from NYC when he was over there in April.

>>206124
nah i actully appreciate your help bud alot!
thanks ^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^

>>206122
and i really dont know, brix will be shat.

30d, d70 or d200
the canon range just completely confuse me though!
>> TheGeneral !m7n7x2Yyfo
>>206124
the zoomring did what?! oh lawdie. if that's not bad build quality, I don't know what is.
>> TheGeneral !m7n7x2Yyfo
>>206131
don't worry man /p/ is here to help. or not.

but seriously what confuses you about the canon line?
>> Anonymous
>>206134
umm just the way they group stuff together,
like which older lense ae capable of metering and which lenses fit on each camera,

and their kit lense of F4 sux lool

check b&H

30D -$800,
D200-$1300

>.<
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
The rubber on the zoom ring melted off, i mean the glue holding it.

Makes sense i was walking around taking photos of shanghai in 35-38 degree celcius weather with about 90% humidity. the black on the camera would have sucked ALOT of heat.

If canon is the decision grab a 30D and forget the digital rebel range, the plasticky feel put me off too.

You can't go wrong with either the 30D or D200 really. It also depends on how much money you have left over for lenses, cause that i would argue is far more important.
>> Anonymous
>>206140
agreed, bodies are always upgraded but glass stays around, people still using glass from 60's-70's haha
>> Anonymous
>>206140
how was shanghai jerem00?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>206142

Great had a lot of fun, gonna travel China properly towards the end of the year.

What is your budget anyway?
>> Anonymous
id say about a $1000 to start off with, allthough this is easily passable,

need a good camera and a good prime to kick me off, i sold all my film gear so got quite the cash haha :D

lol ok. personal choice. I had fiddled around with a nikon and a Canon. Canon just felt right for me.

Then I realized I was fondling the 1Ds, and the price left my jaw on the floor. Bought a 300D, and kinda despised it for it's plasticky feel. but whatever. 1Ds here I come!

and all that aside, It's the things infront of the camera body and behind it that count right?
>> Anonymous
>>206150
of coarse bud,
whats a camera without a photographer ;)

bodies are easily upgradable,
friends dad is a photojournalist and offered me a 350D with lens kit for 300, but i wasnt sure about shutter count!
>> Anonymous
>>206150
Yes, but what connects one to the other makes a difference, too.

Comparison: One could have a USB 2.0 reader and a fast hard drive, but if the USB card in the computer is only 1.0, shit is going to suck.

Similarly, if you stuck [insert your favorite lens here] on a camera with 50% viewfinder coverage, 5% magnification, a weird meter, one contrast-detect autofocus point and not capacity to manual focus, and a shutter control that involves flipping five switches in different sequences... well, you get where I'm going here... and put Jim Nachtwey behind it, the pictures probably won't be great. They'll be like what you or I take now.

You put us behind it? MySpace angled self-portraits processed to suit and posted to DeviantArt will be better.

>>206154
i couldent aagree more anon,

all takes time to learn and devlop the skills required, or every thirteen yr old girl on myspace would think shes a professional photographer.
