There are some rare circumstances where the picture would be either overexposed or underexposed and careful HDR would improve it. An example would be a photograph where you need someone to be placed in the shade but the lit areas are still visible.

Meh, some HDR I just did today. I think it's best used at the extremes: Either too subtle for you to notice or so much that it gives the shot a dreamlike quality to it.

Course, most people use it like putting lipstick on a pig.
