Manual or Auto? Anonymous
/p/, I have a photographer friend that swears by auto. I'm focused more into video, but I'd imagine manual is where it's at. What should I say to really convince him?

What do you mean by auto? Auto focus? Auto exposure? Generally, the camera is more accurate than you are, so I use auto with manual override.

Sorry, I meant the program modes.

Videofag here.
Auto in photography is okay. I work in manual or program modes most of the time.
It's different with video where you never ever use auto, because the lightning can change when you move your camera, and you do not want to have your image to suddenly get brighter or darker.

I use Aperture Priority, which is semi-manual in my book.

My camera doesn't have "Program" modes like Portrait, Landscape, that kinda thing.

I'm curious about how exactly manual works with video.

Well I thought as much. Just seems kinda silly to buy a DSLR to be able to switch lenses and all that jazz only to let it do everything for you.

He is an amateur, though. Like straight up out of nowhere, not touching a DSLR (or SLR, or read any photography books), bought a D70s and used auto ever since. I'd think there's plenty more to learn from it than that, right?

Settings vary from camera models (some have more fancy features than others), but typically there is an AF and AE, which both may change depending on the shot/scene.

Those fancy features deals with things that usually don't change in the duration of the scene, like color temp, white balance, chroma level, gamma, the list goes on...

Why do you care? Let him shoot how he wants to shoot.

If it's really that big a deal to you that someone doesn't do it exactly how you do, try taking a shitload of pictures of exceedingly high quality, good enough that he asks what your secret is. Then preach the gospel of manual mode.

(Flip side of that: If his shots are consistently better than yours, maybe you should move to autoexposure yourself)

Can't argue with that.
Regarding the autoexposure - I'd think it would depend on what kind of shots you're doing. If you're taking quick shots in an area with highly variable lighting, autoexposure might be very helpful. If you don't want conventional exposure, or are taking shots of scenes that have high-contrast lighting, then autoexposure may be worthless. Iono, I just use manual when I have time to, and auto when the lighting conditions mean it'll work well enough but there isn't time to use manual.
