Hai /p/

Right now I wanna grow a mustache and become a man, so I'm saving some money for buying a decent camera.
(This would actually be my first digital SLR)

What are your opinions about the Canon xsi? Seems pretty good for me, as well as accesible for my current economical status.

If you think this one is pure crap, i beg you to suggest a better one.
>> Anonymous
Yup, it's pure crap. Get a D80.
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
Go to a camera store and try it out. Try out some other similarly priced cameras while you're there.

Between here and page 10, there's like 8 threads about what you're talking about. You could even get in your car, go to penn camera and hold them in your hand yourself.

Don't be a faggot that needs to be told what to like.

Look i don't mind a gear thread once in a while. BUT WE DON'T NEED 10 FUCKING THREADS BY POSTERS WHO ARE GETTING THEIR 'FIRST REAL CAMERA LOL'.

I wouldnt go with the xsi. It's a nice entry level one, but ultimately it's just a rehashed version of their xt. It's nothing special. If you want something nice, reliable, and in the same price range, look for a 20d or a 30d. I use these at my studio, and while they aren't new by any standard, they get the job done well and are as reliable and sturdy as an ak-47.

The xsi's are nice, new toys. But like every other entry-level dslr, I find myself limited in some shooting environments and laughing at some of the more gimmicky stuff on 'em.

If you're just getting into photography, they're fine. It might be cheaper to go with an xt though. If you shoot primarily in M or Av and shun pattern exposure mode, then get a 20D. I like shooting with the 20D brick.

I also wanted to buy the 450D (Rebel XSi), because I'm a huge canonfag, and because their other entry dslr is shit (1000D - XS)

I didn't buy it in the end, because I couldn't justify spending that much on something I use so rarely, but think it's a great camera. Also, anonymous and tripfag mentioned 20D and 30D, you could probably find them cheap (half a decade old digital camera?) but I'd never buy something without a liveview (because I'm a noob).

if you want to save money and technically get a better package at the end of the day, i would look for the rebel XS, its being replaced by the XSI and they acutally downgraded it a bit and jacked the price, so i would suggest OP go looking for a XS while there still there.
>> Um.....no Anonymous
Where are you getting your info from? The XS came out AFTER the XSi, it is not being replaced by it. It was based off the XSi design with a degraded feature set for a lower price. I personally love my XSi and shoot with it almost every day. It works great for me and is everything I need, despite what some people choose to say. It's a great starter dSLR.

Oh, so what do people dislike about it?

Viewfinder isn't very good, though from looking through it once I can say it's not as much of a pile of absolute suck as most other entry-level DSLRs. It's significantly better here than all of Canon's past entry-level cameras, enough to go for it over them used.

It doesn't have two control dials, which isn't as much of a problem as people make it out to be, but it's still just part of the very non-photographer-oriented design. Same with no top LCD- though there's legit reasons to drop that besides saving them money, namely it lets the camera be smaller since it can also use the rear LCD.

But this is probably your best option. Go for an older, used, non-entry-level camera. Go check out in a store how Canons, Nikons, Pentaxes, Sonys (used to be Minoltas), Olympuses, etc. feel and handle and shoot to you, personally. They all have different interfaces and design philosophies, but are pretty much the same otherwise. Pick the one you like, buy a decent non-entry-level model used.

none of the entry level cameras have 2 control wheels

and nigga best be joking about the "non-photographer-oriented design" thing

and again, none of the entry level cameras have 2 screens

Drops the second control dial and some of the finder size.

In return, newer sensor and image stabilization. Worth it if you're into autofocus and don't need the larger finder, I'd think, but if you manual focus the older *ist D might be the better option.
