Shooting matrix in manual mode, OTOH, is not a good idea, since no-one but the engineers at Nikon knows the occult numerology the matrix mode runs the light through. One is almost making decisions blind with it.
What I usually do is point the spotmeter at something I want medium-gray, since that's all and exactly what a spotmeter is, if I don't have time to fiddle with test shots and histograms to overexpose the raw file. CWA is also useful when there's not time to really meter much at all, because at least one knows how it's weighted.
