CCD Question Anonymous
Hey, I have a question about CCDs in DSLR cameras and the "bulb" shutter speed selection.

A while back, a sonystore employee told me that the reason sony's prosumer cameras didn't have the "bulb" setting any more was because that option can let people "burn" their CCD, causing streaks / discoloration on future pictures.

However, a DSLR I'm looking at buying does have a bulb setting and I'm curious: is this a danger, or was the guy just full of shit?

I haven't had it happen on my Rebel XT

Because Canon uses CMOS sensors, not CCD

Do you think it would burn-in on a CCD but not a CMOS?

The camera I'm looking at does use a CCD, but I still haven't been able to find anything with google about this problem.

The key phrase here is "a sonystore employee told me". I wouldn't trust a retail salesperson if they told me the sky is blue.

hehe yeah, but better safe than sorry. I'd hate to kill a CCD by taking a long exposure stars-at-night shot.

If you are on CCD, you are looking at Nikon.

I've had my cam D70s on 30secs a lot...no problem at all.

Most of the "Burning" happens when there is extreme light such as long exposures to direct sunlight. But if you use you brain, you wont do that at all.

I've done 20+ minute exposures for Star pics before, About 20 of them probably (trying to get meteor shower pics) Too much light pollution where I was though.

So burn in isn't an issue, just don't do a 20 minute pic in the middle of the day and i'm sure you will be fine (I have a D50 BTW)

Alright, cool. I only plan on doing a few star pics when I go up north this summer (almost no light pollution at all).

Thanks all for the help!
