you can always tell where a photographer is in terms of experience by their favorite photographer. beginners all love ansel adams. the taste of an advanced amateur lies somewhere in the first three-quarters of the twentieth century, probably a street photographer or maybe a landscape artist. pretentious artfags like me love working artists that get little internet exposure but tons of notice in museums and books. old pros love some obscure glass plate photographer from 1894.
i've got about a million favorites, but if my head ever gets too big and i need to be reminded that i'm doing it wrong, i just have to look to hiroshi sugimoto. and maybe michael kenna.
pic related, hiroshi sugimoto.
