In my opinion, this is georgous. I love the feeling and the contrasts in the black and white choice of these pictures... Amazing. Where did you take that?

Bit too much gray. Need to stretch the histogram out a bit so you have brighter whites.

I think the gray and unperfect white balance of these pictures adds something to it.

Yes, something called "NEEDS MORE PP WORK"

I think they suck. They're macro shots of ants, turned into insta-art. Wow.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY

color added squat so why leave them color?

Black and white added nothing so why alter them? If your prostate is that squozen over it, allow me to rephrase my critique:

I think they suck. They're macro shots of ants. Wow.

Everyone knows an ant... can't...
Move a rubber tree plant."

I tried it in color, I just didn't like it as much in color.

Different set of ants than from yesterday.

That's so much better, being in color.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
I think you definitely CAN do nice macro stuff with very limited depth of field... this isn't it, however. Either work on your compositions so that they actually WORK with no depth of field, or stop the fuck down so we can actually see what's in the picture. With this sort of reproduction ratio, we're talking at LEAST f/22, if not higher.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
>>167640
can you manual focus at f22?
viewfinder is dark enough at f8

remember I am working with a cheap bellows here
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>167652
Barely, yes. You're not really focusing so much at that point as moving slightly backwards and forwards, and then snapping/strobing as soon as you hit clarity. If you can't do it though, I don't know what to tell you, because that kinda fucks shit up. I dunno, use Live View, if your camera has it (though I assume very few people have that option right now)

ignoring the problem of focus

f22 prolly wouldn't give me a fast enough shutter. These guys are not sitting still and already using my 430ex as bright as it goes while reflecting it's light to the subject with paper and using an LED flash light to try to light it from another side as well on top of ambient light.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>167683
If you're seriously doing macro work, you should be working from a tripod. Anyways, it's a moot point, as a strobe should give you more than enough light to light it at f/22. I know the Vivitar 285 throws out a lot of light, but surely that canon flash can manage, at ISO 400 at least.

The issue not hand holding it, the issue is that they you know, move.
