you need to work more on separating your foreground, midground, and background. look up triangular composition.

You're in the right area, you just need to learn how and what to shoot better. Are you just walking to an area and shooting something something interesting? or are you seeing something interesting and then deciding what area it would be best to shoot that interesting subject from? Also 24mm on rebel(1.6) = 38.4 aka zzzz focal length for nature.

and the actual image for better comparison

do you see how I changed your composition to create better eye movement and emphasize each part of the picture to make it more interesting? Keep those kind of thoughts in mind when shooting, but more importantly when you view other peoples work.

op here. Your shoop is a lot better then mine. i try to move to the best area but i when im lazy and when several other people are with me i feel pressured to hurry up. 24 is the widest i have. would you recommend anything(cheap 100-300$ range)? Also what does the gradient tool do?

ho boy

I used it very slightly in your image, I'll use one of mine as an example, easier to see.

You use it to darken certain areas of the photos to force interest and you can use it to vignette. The best use is if you work in adjustment layers you can use it to adjust the tones in one area and not the tones in another.

So here we have the gradient on.

without it on

How to:
1 Make a layer
2 Bucket it black and then change it's opacity so you can see your image
3 with the blacked layer selected hit create layer mask and then click on the newly created mask (square to the right of the black one) and then select gradient
4 With black your color selection hit the rectangle with the gradient preview in it (top left) and then in the window that opens select the gradient that goes from black to transparent
5 with your layer mask selected place your gradient on the image and adjust your opacity for desired effect

Now suppose you want to only adjust part of the image, you can use this layer mask gradient for the same thing but instead of choosing what part of your image is darkened, you're choosing what part of the image is adjusted.

Here we have it with the layer adjustment on

and with the adjustment

I used a layer mask to chose not to adjust the cotton seed but only the background allowing me to brighten the background without changing the already well exposed seed. You can use this same concept to fix exposure problems between the foreground and the sky in landscape photography

This photo has other problems but here's an example of using it in landscapes. The foreground and background need to be adjusted separately and with layer masks you can. Any questions?

not OP, but thanks natureguy. helpful as always.

Question: Why did you choose to do a layer mask on a curves adjustment layer in the two with the cotton seed as opposed to just a plain new and black bucketed layer?

Thanks in advance.

I er posted them in the wrong order for one. The first one is the final image, the second the before. A black paint bucket is well, a black layer. The layer mask is telling photoshop what part of the image I want the extra black present in like with the monkeys. For the seed I wanted to brighten the background which I did via the curves. With the layer mask tool I told it to only effect background around the seed and not the seed.

So here's the same image with the adjustments on but the layer mask removed. Since the layer is brightening the image till I had the tones I wanted in the background, it blew out the whites in the seed. By masking they're not blown out because photoshop is told not to adjust it.

I'm getting kinda of tired of continuously posting this kind of shooping. Expect a thread dedicated to masking in a couple of days. I can screen cap it and make these threads a lot less work =D

You're boss as fuck. Thanks again for the very clear response.

Your zoo thread was full of stuff you've already said, but I appreciate it none the less. Looking forward to your masking thread.

Just to clarify - a layer mask is not colour... it 'tells' what parts of the layer are showing up on the picture.. the black is what isn't showing up, and the white is what is...

this way, you could, say.. desaturate the whole image, but put a layer mask on the desaturated layer and make everything but a flower in the center black (the flower would be white).. that way everything but the flower would be desaturated

i'm beginning to grab the concept of it.. i mean it's a mask and all. it's right in the name.

thanks guys.
