Not a troll thread. I was wondering whether i should sign up to Flickr. Mainly because i'd like some feedback on the pictures i take and i don't see Facebook as adequate for that. So do you think i should sign up?

If your comments are only to say 'HURR flickrfags' please don't post.

You don't need to post everything.

This is sort of along the lines of "HURR flickrfags," but it's true.

You won't get useful feedback on Flickr, for three reasons.

1. The userbase. Generally horny, almost always ignorant of photographic history and devoid of photographic taste.

2. They probably suck worse than you do.

3. Lack of anonymity combined with most people not having the guts to say when something sucks. Either buddy up with Jim Nachtwey or Elliot Erwitt or someone and get them to do a portfolio review, or just post to /p/.

Oh, and am I the only one who doesn't get the whole "groups" bullshit? "Oh, hey, wow, your photograph fits into this at once absurdly narrow ('cause everybody else has done the others before and I need to have my own) and vague category, just like some of mine! Neato! Please add it!"

I got another photosite account that serves for hosting whole albums, but I also got Flickr for posting single photos. searching is great with all the tagging, and how people document their photos.

on the other hand, I get little feedback, and flickr is too much hype/too little in-depth. and there's the terrible whoring too, with the thousands of groups. some people post a single photo to dozens of groups.

it's still better than Deviantart, where wannabe artists dwell

ac, link me to your stream?

flickr is useless for critiques. "lol hey bro das w1ckD kewl" is not a critique. join photosig. you'll get a lot of 1TU ratings (which means acceptable by photographer's standards but nothing at all special), but you will get useful feedback.

Just be ready for the many times your "great shot" turns out to be plain jane to everybody else. You will get critiques, honest ones. You'll need to grow a bit of a thick skin, but you can learn a LOT.

The community is pretty useless, but that's not what I use it for. It's a good place to have your photos hosted for free, displayed in a nice way and you've got an easy link to share with people.

I've used Flickr since early 2005 and while it's not an ideal place to receive worthwhile feedback and critique, it is a very good place to meet other photographers in your area. There are some excellent communities on the site, it's not all idiocy (though like anywhere on the internet, there is still an unavoidable amount of such).
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
The emphasis is really on networking. What's useful are groups for your particular city, and groups dedicated to a particular genre of photography. Don't spam your photos, but there's nothing wrong with posting them to a variety of groups. You can get some decent feedback, but you have to be real critical and sort through the crap groups to get there. Just, you know, go in with a purpose and feel free to ignore the b.s.
>> angrylittleboy !wrJcGUHncE
Just stay away from those groups that give you those sparkly animated gifs telling you how much of a wonderful photographer you are.

Although rare, there are good groups in flickr with people who do know what they're doing.

One of my photos was drenched with that stuff a month or two ago. I got enough glitter to be a super master saiyan or something. EAT YOUR HEART OUT ANSEL ADAMS!

Agree with most of the comments passed here already.

Flickr is also good for sharing pics with family/friends that you don't want publicly available, which suits me as I have family abroad. The user interface is smart and very easy to use. A pro account for $1 per month hosts unlimited files permanently as well as things like stats on your account and pics, etc.

>> Warren !WSxruxpIJs
While I will agree that it isn't necessarily the best place for useful feedback, I would argue that no site is (you want real feedback, have a critique in person). It is fantastic for networking and for seeing a lot of great photography that you wouldn't otherwise have any idea existed. I love flickr, think its great. There are idiots and assholes there like anywhere else, but there are also a truly surprising number of really talented photographers there.

Join its free. I get free pro accounts with my internet service. FUCKING WIN!

Plus theres plenty of groups where you can ask for opinions.
