Funny, it works the exact opposite... People don't bat an eye at me with my 50mm on, but as soon as my 135mm comes out they're all "holy shit theres a photographer! hey mr.photog can you shoot the moon with that lense/how far does that thang zoom" Sucky for candids but good if you actually want to talk to the mouthbreathers for some reason.
Also act like you're taking a panorama shot. Start before the subject then take a picture of person then keep panning your shot. Ignore the subject. Again this is for candid stuff.
Also, Golden Rule: take picture first, ask for permission later
