AI means "Automatic Indexing", this basically tells the camera what aperture setting you have selected on the lens, this it can calculate the according exposure. AI-s is Automatic Indexing with shutter priority (hence the s), this was introduced mostly for sports or action. This is where you select the shutter speed on the body and the body will automatically chose the correct fstop on the lens when the shutter release button is pressed. basically the opposite of an AI lens. but an AI-s lens can operate in the same manor as an AI lens, also are newer.
