Fuck yeah dudes, I think I just sold this image. Creative director of an ad agency contacted me via flickr, wanting to buy this image and perhaps others from the set. Pretty fucking win. Also, I might get to sell an image library to them if I can get some more firetruck-chasing shots.

Anyone know how to get the lowdown on fire department activity in a city?
>> Anonymous
Start one yourself?

Serious answer, I dunno, think they use radios you can tap into?
>> angrylittleboy !wrJcGUHncE
Befriend the local firestation and later on ask them for tip-offs for once-in-a-while cups of coffee or bottles of beer?

That's how some people I know work.

My grandma used to have a police scanner and she'd know if anything was going down locally. But you don't want to be an old woman, do you?

But congrats! beethy is right, that is an awesome set.

1. grab lawnchair and supplies
2. sit outside the fire station smoking pot
3. wait until fire time.
4. ?????

Probably a good idea. I've conversed with a few firemen around Austin... we've got a lot of old, historic firehouses that are very quaint and cute and WASPy and shit. I always thought doing a long-term project on them might be fun, since I've always had somewhat of a fondness and connection to firefighters. It's conflicting though, when I'm intending to sell the images rather than use them editorially.

I like #2! I see profit.

If you live in a small town just buy a cheap used cb radio and stick it in your car, find the channel that they chatter on and listen in whenever you're just drivin around. Not sure if they use CB radios for larger cities but out here in the sticks we still use them.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
Don't undersell yourself, especially since he will likely want it for commercial use (Commercial use will also if I remember right, require waivers from the people in your pictures)
If he wants the rights to the picture, make sure you charge him astronomical prices, like 1000-2000$ an image.

the genius of the plan lays in its simplicity

lol

austin is so progressive and uppity. I bet they ditched CB's years ago and probably hopped on the satellite bandwagon

A good trunking scanner is your best bet, just don't have it on you while committing a felony!
>> Anonymous
>>148962
No reason why you can't do both. Just try to forget about the commercial side so you're not trying to please this ad editor.

>>148966
I'd advise against selling all rights to a picture in any circumstance, especially when they're as good as these. You lose all control over your own work.

Who knows? This guy could sell publication rights to an anti-firefighter group and this thing could wind up in some flyer shooped to reflect poorly on the firefighters with "(Photo by: Caleb Miller (C) 2008 by [Name of ad agency])."

And even if there is no credit... I don't know about anyone else, but the idea of someone using my work for something I don't support just makes selling full rights out of bounds for me. Sell the right to publish, fine, but not full ownership.

>>148990
Agreed, not a fan of selling full rights.

>Sell the right to publish, fine, but not full ownership.

I agree with that.
But hey, other than that.. GRATS!!! This set is your best work yet and deserves more recognition.

If you're selling full rights to an image and will loose rights to that particular image, dont settle for anything under $3000 :)
>>148966
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>149678
Honestly, as a neophyte photographer, I'm fine selling full rights, though I will retain self-promotional usage rights. Once I've made my name and gotten a few more clients, then perhaps I'll have some leverage.

Seeing as there is no Exif, could you tell me what cam, lens you used and if there was anything else used?

Nikon D50 with a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. Most of these were at f/8. Processed with Lightroom. Pretty heavy sharpening, bumped up the saturation, took down the vibrance, leaving only a few strong colors. It's a nice effect, I like using it.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>149688

if you're going to sell the rights- go higher than you're comfortable going- it doesnt matter if you're fully established or not. Selling full rights to a photo means you can't use it anymore--or negotiate a contract for specific useage rights on their part, but id still charge an arm and a leg for full useage. Did you get a release from the firefighters?

No, but I haven't got any faces or recognizable figures, so it's legit.

I'll play the game, believe me, I've witnessed it being played often enough. My mom was a freelance illustrator and graphic designer for 35 years in a major media market.

start the fires yourself..then just wait for them to show up. take pics of things in the area just in case they start getting suspicious..at least then you have some random pics so you have at least somewhat of an alibi.

btw, nice picture..congrats!

has anyone suggested a radio scanner?
>> Anonymous
OP: Get an all band scanner. That is all.

You can keep track of fire, police and EMS as well as other things like train yards, military, and airfields. You never know what sort of shit you'll find out. I recommend the Bearclaw 246T from Uniden.

dat sum hdr?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>149948
Yes, he got the firefighters to hold reeeeeally still and froze the water in mid-air with some liquid nitrogen so he could get several bracketed shots to make this HDR tonemapped version. That's really the most impressive thing about this shot.
>> Anonymous
Hi OP, you know it's good, because I just sold that same exact one to someone for their web site sidebar. I'm awesome!
>> Anonymous
>>149954
Hey ac. Just wanted to tell you about this program called photoshop. It lets you edit in layers, and then blend them together, making it totally possible to make an hdr out of that scene without much trouble.
>> Anonymous
>>149960
You don't know what HDR is, do you?...
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>149960
Hey anonymous. Just wanted to tell you about this concept called High Dynamic Range Imaging. By definition, it means an image file that has more dynamic range than the camera can natively capture, which means that you can't make one from one image. Otherwise, it's just... dynamic range imaging.
>> Anonymous
I every post from>>149948on is off.

No, it's not HDR, or at least I don't think so. Black pavement to white clouds and waterstream is perfectly within the dynamic range of even tiny point and shoot sensors. No, HDR doesn't require multiple exposures to do if the photographer shoots raw, but ac probably knows that and was making a joke.

One of my friends has this service
http://www.1rwn.com/webpages/home.aspx
He's also a volunteer firefighter and receives notifications from this service shortly after he gets a call to rush to the station.
>> Anonymous
>>149967
I'd say standard shots are DR, raw-tweaked shots are MDR, and multi-shots are HDR.
>> Anonymous
>>149977
and if you combine many HDR shots you get UHDR

See if you can chill out at the FD, give them a cut maybe?

Or just chill near one and when you hear sirens DRIVE.

This.

Do the David Alan Harvey sort of thing. Pick a fire station, get in with them, hang around the station, follow them to the fires, or even ride in the truck if you can.

He lived with a poor black family for a few months as his breakthrough story. You'll live with firemen for yours.

THANK YOU, this is super useful.

Awesome tips everyone, it's really encouraging. There's a lovely firehouse in my new neighborhood that would be very cool to cover... think I may do that on my off-days. :)
