Let's not start with the ultrafastlensesthatcreateimagesthesizeofyourpenis bullshit. There have been many fast lenses made for cinema and otherwise, but none of these are full frame or meant for photographic cameras, thus they don't count.

Well, the Zeiss 50/.7 used in Barry Lyndon was meant as a wide for 56x56 format Hasselblads. NASA needed it to shoot on the moon.

Then, gloriously nutso Kubrick got his hands on one and had it hacked to Arri mount; he probably could've put the stuff for movements on it if he wanted to and the circle would've been big enough. It wasn't a cine lens at all.

Trivia: Before he got into directing fictional cinema, Kubrick was a photojournalist. Up top, that's him doing a self-portrait with his screwmount Leica.

No. Faking a fast aperture is, though.

In addition to using that zeiss lens, Kubrick actually push-processed the entire film (Barry Lyndon) two stops. Pretty crazy if you ask me.
