I need to get a digital camera and start capturing what's going on around me. I'm on a budget, but want to take pictures that at least as clear and colorful as this one.

What should I look for, what should I avoid? Where can I learn?

Well, I could probably go as far as a Digital Rebel, but would there be a point for me? I can see myself getting a few lenses within a year.

a powershot will be more versatile out of the box than a dslr with kit lens

but the dslr will smash the powershot's fuck for speed (both speed of use and actually taking action shots) and low light
