Conclusion - Cons

* High ISO performance worse than 40D
* Reduced dynamic range in the shadow areas compared to EOS 40D
* Per-pixel detail not as good as on good 10 or 12 megapixel cameras
* High-end lenses required to get the most out of the camera
* Poor white balance performance under artificial light
* Flash must be up for AF assist lamp (although AF is good even in low light)
* Live view not as accurate as on 40D (framing very slightly off-center, not possible to magnify right out to the extreme corners)

Oh, bummer, that really sucks about the 50D, I really thought... wait what 5D Mark II?

I don't get this. How the hell do people manage to fuck up an LCD finder?

It's like those old bridge cameras; some of them had on the EVF and/or LCD like 9x% coverage like an SLR. How/why does a direct feed from the sensor get cropped?
>> Anonymous
No one in their right mind would buy a 50D, that's why the 40D is still being produced and sold alongside it.

The 40D costs $500 less and is 90% the camera the 50D is.
The D90 costs $500 less and is 85% the camera the 50D is.
The D300 costs almost the same and is 110% the camera the 50D is.

Horrible, horrible camera released at the wrong time. Canon would get much more flack if it wasn't for the 5D II over shadowing this stupidity.

>>Flash must be up for AF assist lamp (although AF is good even in low light)
Same as 40D. The white light on the front of the body is the countdown light for the timed shutter.

Also, the 40D has 3 slots for 'Camera User Settings' and the 50D only has 2 slots.

>No one in their right mind would buy a 50D

Yep. I think the 50D is supposed to be the gullible consumer version of the 40D, for people looking to upgrade a Rebel for whatever reasons consumers would upgrade the Rebel.

Think D40x versus D40, except slightly upmarket here for people who want THE BEST but don't really care about photography or results.

what are those custom modes for anyway, don't feel like reading dpreview to find out

is it just like, let's say my custom mode #1 is for sports, i'm going to input shutter priority mode, and 1/500 as min. shutter speed, ISO 800, RAW+JPG

each time i put it back in custom #1, it goes to those settings? isn't that a bit lazy or is there more to it

Say you have some strobes, and you do location shoots, and you have different 'common' set-ups. Set your f/, shutter, ISO, af-mode, drive mode, white balance, metering mode, shooting mode (p, av, tv, m, a-dep), exposure compentsation, flash exposure compensation, and file saving mode. Then you register them to the camera user setting.

On future shoots, you can set your lights up quickly, move the dial to the preset, and shoot away.

Also, if you have common settings that you use during urbex, you can dial all of them in as you pick up the camera without having to verify the settings.

what you call lazy, others call efficient
>> Anonymous
that's not being efficient, if you were efficient, you'd check the settings before hand and take 35 seconds to set them

if people are too lazy or dumb to check their settings in the first place, what's an extra mode on your dial going to help
>> Anonymous
>>284704
Sometimes you don't have these 35 seconds. Say, when you are shooting with and without the flash during the same shoot, it's very useful to have 2 ready sets of settings.

with flash, i'm in M, click click click click

ohnoes, i'm not using flash anymore, put it in A, the last aperture used is remembered, click click click click

back with lights, ohnoes! put it in M, click click click click

i'm being so efficient it's overkill

Say you're swapping between two or three vastly different sets of presets. For example, if you're switching between Goatse-aperture + high ISO for low light stuff vs narrower aperture + low ISO + blasting it with flash vs medium ISO + medium aperture + long exposure.

I actually used the C1/C2/C3 on my 40D for exactly this a while back, and I frequently use it for bouncing between flash or available light photography with the turn of a switch (and removal of my flash remote trigger). Much, much faster than changing ISO, speed, and aperture as separate actions, even with dual control wheels.
>> Anonymous
>>284711

going from no flash to flash is going between A and M for 98% of people

any decent camera remembers the settings last used in any mode. it takes less than 35 seconds to change from your "Goatse-aperture + high ISO" to "medium ISO + medium aperture"

>> so it _is_ for the lazy
>> Anonymous
>>284710
Doesn't exactly work when working with fill flash and/or shooting jpegs (since you also need WB presets). Custom modes can be used in any situation, and anyway, what takes their place on the dial if they're not present? Yeah, pointless stuff like scene modes, A-DEP or just nothing.

So what I'm to take from this thread is:
* Moar megapickles
* Upgrade from ISO 3200 to ISO 12800
* Removed C3 mode and replaced it with a MOAR BORKAH mode

Sounds like /p/ is going to loev it
>> Anonymous
All of those conclusions are wrong.

I certainly hope you never use aperture priority mode you lazy faggot.

Neither of my Canon DSLRs save the ISO from mode to mode (I.e., if you change to Av ISO200, switch to M ISO400 and switch to Av again, you'll still be in ISO400). Same goes for my Nikon D50. Dunno about more recent/higher end Nikons.

So yeah, you could argue that it's for the lazy. But you could argue that for all modes other than M, autofocus, and all of the other nice little things that make shooting with a modern camera different from shooting with a camera from the 50s. In the rare cases where I need my custom modes, they're a fantastic help. If you think you don't need 'em, no skin off my back.

I shoot in only manual, and I found myself wishing there was "a switch" earlier today on my camera that would flip between two or three pre-set exposures for the different degrees of shadow and angled sunlight that happen walking down a simple city street.

With an old-style camera with a bonafide shutter speed dial, it's simple. With most modern ones where the thing just twists around an electronic menu, it's still simple, but it'd be nice to have something equally simple.

So it isn't just for you lazy autophiles.

You know another reason people are switching to Nikon?

Nikon gives sales reps bonus money when they sell their cameras.

Canon gives sales reps "points" for some of the time. Points which have to be submitted online. Then faxed in. Then redeemed.

Who do you think reps are goign to push? The company that makes them go through shit for mediocre rewards, or the company that gives them bonus money on their paycheques?

One of them being the photographer.

Even if the Nikon "cash" is > than the canon points

How many people do you know, go into the camera store ready to be told what camera to buy? Other than P&S's which I believe Canon cleans up on...

I doubt more than 5% of the market. and that percentage is probably far below that when you consider the DSLR's past the D40(x) and D60

You wold be surprised what people do in the fucking camera store/section. Sure, most people get talked into some stupid P&S. But there are people who buy DSLRs with only a little bit of knowledge and seriuosly ask the salespersoin "which one is better?"

The more I look at the 50D, the more I realize its not the 5D II. That thing is the tits.
>> Anonymous
>>284872
I have, worked in a Camera store for 6 months, I talked quite a few people into buying camera's other than the ones they were looking for.
However I didn't recieve any of these Nikon / Canon incentives, my boss may have been withholding them from me.

However, most of the converting, was from shitty P&S's to other, less shitty P&S's. Only a few times did I convince someone to buy a DSLR in another brand. And usually for good reason (Buying a D40 when they wanted to upgrade a few lenses) etc.

So my 5% or less comment is based on my experiences. and I firmly believe that to be true.

Where I live isn't made of money though, not many people just throw money at the "best" usually people are pretty picky about how they spend their money.

"Creative Auto Mode"

>>284885
Dammit, all the companies need to get together and make a few generations of cameras with all-manual everything and a simple CWA meter with a spot option.

Include a booklet on exposure and composition in the box.

Chances of this happening? Zip. But why the hell wouldn't someone at least learn to use the priority modes with matrix metering if they're trying to be creative?

From a thread claiming DP Review wrote the review to "troll" and get more clicks and ad money:

>>284881

Your experience is not entirely typical then. You weren't trying for the same thing, you didn't have the incentives, etc. Incentives happen in a lot of stores for various products. It is not unusual for the boss to pressure employees to push a particular product either in all manner of businesses.

Some people try to stick to selling whatever they feel is best for the customer, but others feel that paying the mortgage and whatever is more important and so go for whatever gives the most money. Working on commission does wonders for motivation.

If you were stuck in that situation and felt you needed the money or commission I'd bet you'd see that percentage shoot up. At least if you wanted to eat and pay for your car/home/whatever.
>> Anonymous
>>284899
oh I believe it.
BUT I still believe 5% is the maximum people would convert from one brand to another.
A lot of the people I tried to convince just left and didn't buy anything, perhaps to ponder what I said / do more research, or to buy online. or that they didn't like my opinion.

I recently heard a good saying about Canon vs. Nikon Cameras. 'Canon cameras are designed by engineers where as Nikon cameras are designed by photographers'.

I think there is a lot of truth in this saying and this is clearly demonstrated by the new 15 mega pixel sensor. The 'engineers' have simply pushed the technology too far because they could(that is what engineers like to do) BUT neglected to consider image quality, which at the end of the day, is really what photographers are concerned most with.

It's DP Review copypasta.

Also, worrying about lens vs. sensor resolution is just stupid. Any lens today is going to resolve enough; who gives a shit if it's the best the sensor can capture or not?

here are some more of the kool-aid drinkers:

IMHO lately the quality of dpreview.com reviews is gradually degrading. What is it? Generation Pepsi came to power? Or is it Generation X? Ha-ha! I find it exceedingly difficult to find a good postdoc for my lab. By the way, testing of modern EOS system is not an easy task even for a professional physicist.

Well, not exactly. First, an informed consumer will check out the prices of Nikon lenses vs Canon lenses and will notice that Nikon lenses are much more expensive (in general). And then will think twice with what system to go.

Ha-ha! Good for you! I would have trusted this review if I didn't have both 40D and 50D in my hands! Thank God I am a physicist and when I have a camera body in my hands I know how to test it myself. I am going to buy a second 50D for my son as a birthday present.
