a 50mm is like a short tele on digital. even wide open, you won't cut it to get proper backgrounds easily. 90001 shows ugly bokeh.
recently I've got myself a katz eye, it revived my 50mm f/1.2 nikkor (couldnt use wide apertures cause of hard manual focus). here's some good advice: getting a fast lens is fun and all, but don't screw around with it, shooting it wide open. its fun alright, but step down to f/2 or f/2.8. it won't make that much of a difference (get a longer lens for blurred backgrounds) and it'll enhance contrast greatly. you can get away shooting wide open more easily in lowlight and on higher ISO values.
second catch: get shorter focusing distance, it will reduce DOF greatly. image very related, at f/2 50cm focusing distance
