I want to get a cheap camera. I don't know much about them, but I'm certain about a few things: I want it to be compact (so I can take it anywhere, concerts for instance), I don't care much for dozens of megapixels (5 is enough) or the quality of the flash (since most cameras have shitty ones anyway) and I DEFINITELY want it to shoot clips in at least 640x480 with sound. I'm thinking of spending $300 at the most. What are some features even cheap cameras should have? I only know that optical image stabilization is the "real" one and a good camera should have that.

Canon A-series
I suggest the A590 IS

If you're gonna spent 300$, you can also go with the ultra-thin compact cameras. Don't ask me which one though.

Btw most cameras only record sound in Mono, I just thought I'd let you know.

I agree with this person though the A720 IS is also good and there's the SD series which is more compact and more expensive but still comparable in performance to the A series.

plus don't forget you cannot zoom while recording a film in most cases

Thanks, guys. Any other suggestions?

Maybe that you should also ask somewhere else because /p/ will always tell you to get a Canon powershot A-series.

With a good reason. The Canon A-series surpass almost any other compact. Especially those that can load CHDK.

Well I have a Fujifilm Finepix kind of like the one in your picture, OP. Given I don't really know shit about photography, it's a nice little camera especially if you're just doing concert photography or little stuff. I also got a photograph that i took with it and doctored in photoshop of an old chicken coup into the second round of a photography competition. It's an okay camera, and not too expensive.

Casio Exilim V7. $125 used, takes good quality pictures (not as good as Canon, but very acceptable for prints even), 848x480 30fps video with stereo sound, built-in recording light for nighttime video, very compact, 7x zoom WHILE taking a video and in pictures, many shot modes, and 3 forms of built-in image stabilization including optical lens-shift and sensor-shifting.

Buy it!

OP here. OK, so I'm thinking about the 720 IS. Do the clips have time limit like Powershot G5 (my dad has it and that pisses me off)? I sure as hell don't want them to be only 3 minutes long.
