/p/,

Suggest a new laptop bag, top loading, with sufficient room for a DSLR with mounted 18-55mm lens in the outer pocket. Similar to this Targus, but with a larger section specifically for the camera.

It's easier to buy a slim laptop bag and a camera case. Most laptop bags are going for that minimalistic look and will not fit a dSLR, especially the lenses. If you really want to carry it with you, I'd suggest a laptop bookbag if you only want one case.

I know Tamrac makes a backpack style camera bag with a laptop compartment, but not sure of suitcase style bags.

even if you did decide to get a bag that big, it would be heavy as hell to carry both. You're better off with separate bags to distribute the weight.
Personally I just use a plain old fashioned school backpack even though I'm an adult. #1, it fits everything and they usually have a section made for a laptop these days #2 it doesn't scream "I'm carrying $4000 worth of stuff worth stealing!" #3 it's a hell of a lot easier to carry.

Crumpler sells rather inconspicuous bags that were designed to hold laptops + camera gear. Google for more info.

I'm a big Crumpler fan too, although I'm an Aussie, so I might be a bit biased.

I've got one of their backpacks (the 'Sinking Barge', I think). It's got a padded laptop pocket with a flap, space for a few books, and a removable three-partition camera case that velcros in to the front pocket. The camera case is a bit small, but it works OK with my D80 with a spare lens.

I've got an old camera shoulder-bag from them too. It's not one of their current models, but it's similar to the '6 Million Dollar Home'. It's good for carrying around basic SLR gear, but it's got no room for a laptop or more than a small notebook.

Crumpler have a big range, though, and most of their bags are velcro crazy, so you can rearrange the interiors to your liking. They're made sturdy, they look interesting. Definitely recommended.

I'd buy one of their laptop and SLR messenger bags, but that style of shoulder-bag is a pain on my motorbike.

I don't know why you'd pay $110 for a bag that looks like one worth $40. I find messenger bags heavy to carry while backpacks are much easier to cover.
