I'm getting one for my birthday. How excited should I be?
>> Anonymous
Somewhere between Very Excited and Turbo Excited. The S1 was a great camera for me, I'm sure the S3 is even better.

it's supposedly only a slight improvement on the s2, 6.2 MP, 640x480 video mode w/sound that maxes out at 1 GB and no specified length (i have no idea if thats a minute or an hour or what) and (my favorite) 12x optical. I love the sound of it, just wanted some honest advice from ppl w/exp. anyone else plz feel free to chime in.

It is the perfect point and shoot, excepted a few things, like its lack of RAW capability.

Thats the camera I have :) It's great for a non-SLR

you should be excited, it's one of the best P&S cameras out there. Just like what anon said, it's great fr a non-SLR camera :)

how many point and shoots can do raw?

Very few. Canon's older G models could, but they dropped it, likely to promote their entry-level SLR.

Of course, there's no technical reason why one of those thirty dollar digital cameras with one megapixel that one sees in department stores can't do RAW other than the software it uses to go between the sensor and the memory card. Or am I wrong?

If I'm not mistaken, I recall shooting RAW with the Powershot S70.

One thing that I can think of is that RAW would require a bigger buffer and possibly a faster processor. Otherwise that's just marketing and lack of demand.

Yeah, it has RAW, but it's not exactly a good camera. If I recall correctly it goes just up to ISO 400 and then there's really really terrible noise, that sensor is just too small.

I have one of these too. Is it possible to get a macro lens that will fit it? Do I need some sort of adapter? Or is it impossible to take macro photos without a $1000 camera?

I'd be excited.
It's a good camera; almost as good as my G7, but not as good as my 30D (but it's not the same type of cam, so whatever.)

well i'm asking /p/ because (obviously) i don't know dick-crap about cameras. i'm learning at a very healthy click though, i picked up the differences between some lenses and the meaning of some terms like aperture in the past few days. I am developing an interest in journalism as a career and i want to start taking high quality photos to accompany my stories.

There's a button on the side, right back from and beneath where on the lens it says, "12x Optical Zoom" in red, that lets one instantly switch between normal, macro, and super-macro photography. It's labled with a little flower.
