looking for a cam bigforhead
i'm leaving the country in a week or so, and my old canon sd110 is being serviced right now, the zoom stopped working *cough*

if the cam doesnt come back soon, i'll have to buy a new one before i go. the DSLR seems a little bulky and overpriced to deal with going overseas and what not, but i do want one in the future, so for now i'm looking for a compact cam.

www.newegg.com > Digital Cameras > Digital Cameras & Accessories > Digital Cameras > type : Compact

can anyone make any recommendations? I’m looking for something in the range of 3 to 4 MP. I don’t ever see myself taking 5 or 6 MP pictures. Looking for decent ISO, if I want to take night pictures (the sun setting, the night sky, the moon) and moving pictures like from a car, what ISO would I need? 400? 800? Overall just recommend me a cheap camera for my trip ^_^

Right now I’m looking at the Canon A540 and the PENTAX Optio M20 Silver 7.0 MP, or maybe spend a little more and get the Canon SD600?

Side Question: a friend said pictures come out better if you take it at a high resolution and use Photoshop to shrink it down, is this true?

a540 is a really good camera for the price, Sd600 is almost identical just smaller and more expensive (And with less zoom)

Pocket cam's take crappy night time pics, thats no exception, some arejust worse than others, From a moving car in daylight the a540 shouldn't be a problem even at its lowest ISO, as long as you keep your apperature wide.

Also unless your running out of room on your mem card, always use the highest quality (non interpolated) to take pics, Its not that the quality is better if you shrink it down, its just using the camera to its full potential.

I bought that same camera, it's awesome!

i sell cameras at bestbuy, and i try and reccomend this camera alot. it's not bad for the price like AP said, you wont be able to take good night shots with anything that isn't a SLR, but hey - it isn't bad. gl

but in the end it would just take up a lot of space in my HD

HD space should be a non issue, (EXCEPT if you have to pack a laptop to save your pictures on MAYBE it would be an issue)

Anyway 1 5mp pic is about 1.8 MB's (lets say 2)
With a 1 gig mem stick thats 500 pictures
1 gig of HD space costs approx 70cents.
a 60 gig HD is then 30,000 pictures.
Say even 500 pictures per set of AA's (Overestimating) thats 60 pairs of AA's Or about 120$ of batteries.

1 otherwise perfect picture ruined because you can only print it at 4x6 because the resolution is too low = Priceless?

Lol Just USE the best quality, biggest resolution, in case you do get that perfect picture that you want to print!
