fuck canon and their shitty battery meter Anonymous
i have a 40d with the vertical grip with 2 OEM batteries in it

i'm shooting for about 8 hours and my meter still shows half left

2 hour break and resume, take like 100 pictures and it just fucking dies

wow, that's really fucking genius to put a shitty ass battery meter like that, you can never tell how much is left once you're past the 50% mark

it either lasts forever or it just fucking dies on you

give us a percentage meter, fucking idiots
>> Anonymous
>>231118

OP here, when i say OEM, i mean the original Canon batteries that come with the grip and camera

i wanted to use a fancy term but didn't realize OEM meant it could be third party
>> Anonymous
I wonder why no one except fucking Sony can do it right.

me again

it was hot as fuck too so i guess it's the battery's fault

but that doesn't change the fact that the current meter is fucking retarded

percentage meter please

You said it was hot. Extreme temperatures do that. I have a 40D, and I've shot every day for a few weeks only to have it go down to about half charge. And that's with USM/IS going.

If you're shooting in temps like that and not using the camera, take the batteries out and store them where they won't be susceptible to just extremes. Then when you're ready, pop them back in, and you should be good to go.
>> Anonymous
Gentlemen.

My 410 (poorfag) is even worse.
Fully charged, it still shows half full.

I've never seen the battery meter on anything but half full, when fully charged, or when empty.
(The battery lasts long though)

The Nikon D80 gives me a percentage reading for each of the batteries in it. LOL

I have 4 camera batteries I keep in my bad for my XTI.

when the battery indicator gets to below half I usually change them.

Also, I have my camera settings to auto shutdown camera after 30 seconds, it only takes a second to start it back up by pressing the shutter button as your getting ready for another shot.

and I keep my LCD off, this is where i noticed the biggest battery saving at.

and check your custom functions, there is a LCD off option on startup. on my XTi its c.Fn-11

Your problem is your own or a malfunction? I went shooting for week filling 6gigs worth of cards in Rocky Mountain National Park on one charge. Also always charge before heading out, not that weird of a concept. lithium gives weird charge readings anyway, ever notice that on your cell phone?

1.
lithium batteries have a limited lifespan, anywhere from 12-24 months, as soon as theyre manufactured they start to degrade.

2. not sure if its batteries in general or lithium again, but in colder heat they have less capacity, so in theory shooting in hot temps should help them out, dunno how "extreme" hot temps effect them.

3.
also, dunno bout the xti but the 30D's battery meter flashes when it gets real low.

4.
also, dunno how much you were shooting, by 8 hours do you mean constantly, like a shot every couple secs or more laxed than that, cos usually out of one charge ill get over 1000 shots, plenty of review off the lcd and the occasional flash...

so i guess it comes back to how old are your batteries?
also, dont worry about paying more just to get OEM batteries, its like buying OEM filters... theyre probably shittier than the available 3rd party options...

That's how every battery meter works. It's all in the marketing. If your battery meter pretends that your battery is full for 90% of the time, the average user will think "HOLY SHIT THIS THING HAS THE LOWEST POWER CONSUMPTION EVER".
Or have you noticed before, that it will take way longer for your cellphone do go down to 50% charge than it takes to go from 50% to zero?

>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
Ignoring that most bears wont attack you unless provoked, and provoked being you're really fucking asking for it, you could always do what the Alaskans do. Carry a 12gauge shot gun loaded with door jam breakers. Though I haven't seen any of those rounds since I was in that store in North Dakota 11 years ago.... regular slugs would probably work just fine.
>> M?e?e?s?e??? !iZn5BCIpug
You don't know anything about how to kill bears. Here's what you do, you stand in front of a tree and wait for the bear to charge. When he charges you jump out of the way and let him hit the tree. He will then be stunned for 2 seconds or so giving you time to slash him with your sword several times. Rinse and repeat three times. Remember to pick up health packs in the bushes.

Why would you buy shotgun rounds intended to break a door jam? Why would you intend to use them on a bear? Why the fuck do you want to break door jams?

Leave the firearms to /k/ and give advice about cameras.
>> Anonymous
>>231760
It's because battery meters read voltage and voltage drop is exponential. So the battery will read say 5v for an hour, then 4v, then 2v, then .5v, instead of just smoothly 5 4 3 2 1 0'ing. Your meter probably just knows 5v = 100% and say 1v= 0% (too low to run the camera)
>> Srs Critique Fag !2y1il5Qy0g

Assuming you're not a trool, they're close-range shotgun ammo used to take out door hinges at point-blank range without worrying about any kind of ricochet coming back to hurt you. It's basically metallic dust instead of a slug or pellets/BBs. Used mostly by SWAT types for breech.
>> Anonymous

>> Anonymous
>>232004
Door jam is how it's spelled where I come from. I'm making fun of the fact that he called door breaching rounds, "door jam breakers". And that he recommended them for self-defense. There's a reason that nobody uses "door jam breakers" on anything except "door jams" (if you know what I mean)

>>231999
Don't you tell *me* what 12 gauge breaching rounds are for. Perhaps you didn't notice the "doorjam.jpg" and that trool should either be spelled troll or tool.
>> Srs Critique Fag !2y1il5Qy0g
>>232015

You're right, they're completely useless. Fire one off in front of your face. Guess what? Your face is just as easily removed as thick wood and metal. But to be honest, specialty ammo is typically fail. Stick to hunting-grade buckshot or slugs. I never said it was the right choice.

I said "assuming you're not a troll" because if you weren't then you'd need a little more info on the subject. What's that? You're a troll? Then shut the fuck up, that post doesn't apply to you, does it?
I will tell *you* whatever the fuck I feel like telling you when I'm drunk and your sarcasm isn't efficiently enough conveyed. Go threaten somebody else on the internet, dumbfuck.

By the way, the fact that you named a file "doorjam.jpg" doesn't affect the subtlety of sarcasm in your tone and is irrelevant.

lithium-ion batteries have an extremely flat discharge rate for the most part. For a large range of the life the voltage is virtually the same. With all the factors there is not really any good predictive way to tell what capacity you're at, so they just use threshold limits for when certain voltage conditions occur. This is why sometimes battery meters can go up.

tl;dr the same thing that makes lithium ion batteries desirable (long life at near constant voltage) makes it hard to get capacity readings.
