Upgrading Lens Anonymous
Nice to meet you /p/

I've been taking pics on my Canon 450D + 18-55 kit lens and am looking to upgrade.

I'm looking for a basic general use lens and another that is good for indoor portraits with low lighting. I mainly use my camera for portraits in general, indoors and out.

I'd been considering the Tamron AF 17-50mm F2.8 and Canon 50mm f1.4. With the indoor lens, would you also recommend a bounce flash?

You're far more knowledgable than I, so I thought it the best place to ask.

What budget do you have for the flash? Enough for the EX 580 II?

Those two lenses would work well enough for indoor portraits or low-light work. It's hard to make a choice like that for someone else as everyone has their own idea and preferences in mind. They do seem sensible enough.

I ask the same question a few weeks ago, but i considered the 50 1.8 instead. Nice set up, i would go with an umbrella- bounced flash using either a ST-E2 or off shoe cord or wireless chinese RF (i cant remember the name).

Yeah, around $400-500 for the flash.

Now I know I'm serious I'm considering this all an investment.

Thanks for your help.

It's a toughie. I think I've pretty much got my heart set on the 1.4 although as there isn't too much difference between the two I may opt for the 1.8 if my wallet begins to send me death threats.

Protip: insure all this kit once you get it. Go to State Farm or whoever and ask them about camera policies; I insured my K100D and kit lens ($750 at the time) for $9 a year against theft and damage.

580EX is a great investment.

Related to that (I am not OP), does anyone know any good UK insurers for camera gear?
