so... /p/...

Do i fail? Should i just give up?
>> Anonymous
>>50283
Other than this one yes, theres a lot of Fail in here, Keep taking pics though, And AVOID anything above ISO 400, it looks like crap on that camera
>> Anonymous
>>50292

Thank you for your imput...

I will keep that in mind... I Still have to figure out of to have a slow shutter speed for a time lasp picture...
>> Anonymous
Post smaller files and RTFM.

>>50295

These where direct from camara. Did not know they would "need" to be formated to a general evaultaion. I Do need to get my hands on photoshop so i can clean up the images, inkscape just does not do it for me.

And yes i do plan on reading the manaul, so much i need to learn to do with the camara
>> Anonymous
wow, what a waste of money

you shouldve gone for a cheaper camera... to start off with
it's clear you are a complete beginner in photography. starting with a Canon S3IS wouldn't have been a bad idea.

as for crits.. kinda hard since most of these shots are incredibly bad and boring, they have nothing going for them.

look for more interesting subjects
do portraits
macro shots
etc.
>> ac
>>50292
The one you referenced as not-fail is just a picture of a sunset. A sunset over a completely flat, boring, mown lawn. So yeah, that's fail too.

But keep trying. Go out to your local library, look through some books of other people's photography, look through some books on photography, take a shit-ton of pictures. You'll get better.

And please resize your photos down to around 1024x1024 max before posting.

Only other shots i took today where of a accident, It has action in it yes, but it was all from my car. about 100 feet away no close shots...
>> Anonymous
Keep photos at full size and don't listen to these losers with slow internet, they have small wangs

Yeah, because wasting 4chan's bandwidth is awesome.

GTFO.
>> Anonymous

Everyone and their grandmother has broadband these days. It's not us, it's 4chan. There is no reason at all to post 2+ MB pictures.

"If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough" --Robert Capa

You never want anything in the frame that's not helping out the picture. I know your response is gonna be "Yeah, well, I was shooting from my car", so I'll head you off at the pass: Get out of your car. It's very, very rare for a picture taken from your car to be worth a damn (pic related).

Also, very few people have 6 megapixel monitors, which means the picture has to either be resized by the browser (which always looks like ass) or you're stuck looking at the picture in shifts.
>> Anonymous
>>50314

Actully I totaly understand what you mean.
But considering I was limited time, and I have no idea how the police would react to me walking up to the car and taking photo's...

I admit I am a beginner... next time I will get out of the car
>> Anonymous
>>50316
People are much more obliging about photographs being taken than one would think.

Also, if you're in the United States, anything (with some national security exceptions) that is in a public area or can be viewed from a public area can legally be photographed.
>> ac
>>50326
Keep in mind that "national security" caveat. My name's probably on a file with the FBI now thanks to a photogenic seagull who happened to be sitting on the Niagara Power Authority's reservoir. :)
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
>>50331
there are no photogenic seagulls, and you are a silly, silly guy.
>> Anonymous
>>50309

That would have been a much better shot if you let the car pass and used the yellow lines of the road to lead you into the subject, cutting out the left had side would have also helped alot.

>>50309
Work on your composition.
It's like art, you want a predefined place for the eye to go, otherwise it will go every which way and confuse the viewer. Get a book about photography or at least art or design.
Keep at it though!

>>50298
Inkscape isn't a photo editor. Not in any sense of the word. It can't be used for touching up photos, resizing photos or converting photos.

It's a vector graphics program. Sure you can import bitmaps into SVGs but it's not for photos at ALL
>> Anonymous
>>50454

Yes i know thats why i resized the one in here with ... mspaint... and YES i know i need to get my hands on photoshop... badly

Ok, here goes a question for you guys...
I found out how to change the shutter speed, but even with -2 exp. all my outside shots turn completely white... any idea how to fix this?
>> Macheath
>>50471
Smaller aperture.
>> Anonymous
>>50472

ok, ill try that then, thanks...
Gotta see if my carama can do that or not...
>> ac
>>50473
Control of your aperture? With a digital SLR? Pfft. Can't be done.
>> Anonymous
God, you're such a noob. Do something about that! Stop asking stupid questions and do your own research.
>> elf_man
Do a search on exposure. Spend half an hour in google and you'll understand what you need to do, then check your camera's manual or hell, just play with the menus and pay attention. You're new; you should be reading everything you can.
>> Anonymous
>>50473
you really should have known what you're getting into when you got a dSLR

But, turn the camera to "M" mode, set the shutter speed (wheel) then hold the +/- key on the back with your thumb and spin the wheel again to adjust aperture
>> Anonymous
>>50483
M mode isn't needed 90% of the time, Shutter priority or Apperture Priority Is the win

Good situations for M, Very dark, Changing light, Using the flash (More so with wireless flash) Fill flash, and sometimes for sports
>> ac
>>50488
In b4 "Real photographers only use M" vs. "Aperture/Shutter Priority is just as good" flamewar
>> photography_expert_(shot_70334+_photos)
>>50496
I'm an expert in this matter. And I can confirm that full manual is all you need, everything else is for the weak beginners and tourists.
>> ac
>>50499
I love you, Photography Expert.
>> Anonymous
i gotta go with ac and photography expert here. since i got my dad's old SLR, i have no choice but to do manual and it helps me compose and pay attention to every detail so much better than auto rapidfire S3 IS cheapo nonsense. i hope my film comes out though, i've never shot fim before.
>> Anonymous
Manual is the same as Av/Tv etc.. etc..
>> ac
>>50514
Oh, for the record, I disagree with what Photography Expert said. I'm in the 'Av/Tv is just as good' camp. I just love Photography Expert's trolls. They make me smile.

I was able to test a few shots and they turned out well, now I need to test it durning the day light to see how well it works out...

Btw, /p/ has been most helpful, this has been been a good learning experance.

I was out and about today and took a few more shots... ill just post one instead of all of them. I gotta keep practiceing

What?

Rapidly changing like is what aperture priority is for.
Shutter priority is for those times when the above is true and you don't want the camera fucking up a motion shot.

Manual is for every other time.

>>50514
The S3IS has a manual mode. Why the hell were you shooting in auto on it?

To the OP- go to the Wikipedia article "exposure" and read all the articles linked off it. That will teach you everything you need about using manual mode.
