All right /p/. I'm thinking about getting the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens for my nikon D50.

What does /p/ think. Is the quality of the lens good?

Price is $429 at B&H

Buy it at a local store if you can, Although Sigma's work 90% of the time on Nikon bodies, This lens is notorious for having minor backfocus issues (I speak from experience, I bought one used and had to return it the backfocus was soo bad!)

Also Sigma4less is usually grey market, Aka if there is an issue you won't be able to send it to Sigma to calibrate it / get warranty work done on it.

Everything I've gotten from sigma4less has been USA warrantied, not gray market.

but if you have a D3/D300 backfocus becomes less/not a problem!

Steps for successful 30mm + D50 ownership:

1. Purchase non-graymarket 30mm.
2. Use on D50, discover backfocus issue.
3. Send back to Sigma for calibration, specifying D50.
4. Receive 30mm a couple weeks later with spot-on focusing ability at all apertures.
5. Profit from having a fast, awesome lens.

Forgive my ignorance, but I always thought backfocus adjustment was done in the camera body and NOT in the lens....

Isn't it a thing where the AF sensor is out of alignment in relation to the imaging sensor? I've heard about lenses being calibrated in general, but I thought that the term "backfocus" didn't apply to lenses.

Putting off-brand lenses on your Nikon is sad. Nikon is primarily a lens company . . .

I generally agree, unless it's a lens that Nikon can't be bothered to make. Like this one.

Nikon does make an AF 28/1.4, but it's really expensive. Also an AF 28/2.8, and some 35mm lenses I don't recall off the bat.

But Sigmas are fine. Unless OP needs that extra speed, the 28/1.8 is worth looking at, too. Both are good, and it comes down to preference and speed and size vs. close-focusing distance.

Actually, no, Nikon hasn't made a 28/1.4 in years. Discontinued in 2006.

2006? Wow, that was years ago! I'd be surprised if that lens even still works it's so old!
