Suggestion: Go to a local camera store and hold a range of cameras in your hands so that you know the weight and "feel". Also, don't rule out cameras in-store that are out your budget unless you plan on paying in cash at that particular store. eBay and Amazon have some great deals on new cameras. (I essentially got a free battery grip and lens when I bought a camera bundle online and factored in a mail-in rebate)

I wanted a Nikon D40 when it was coming out but decided against it when I actually was able to pick one up. It was just too small for me (and I'm female!) It was just slightly larger than my mother's Kodak P&S camera.
