Hi /p/

I'm just about settled on getting a Rebel XTi for my first SLR.

But I'm looking for good all-around lens for nature and domestic animal (for now, until I want lens with better zoom later down the line for wild animals).

Settled on XTi mostly due to weight. Every ounce counts on a long hiking trip.

Budget for lens is.. eh, I don't know. Give me a good range to pick up on. $800 max, I guess? I don't need the absolute best lens, so "best bang for my buck" lens would be nice.

Nature photography is both large scenery and close of flowers and such. Animals is both close and somewhat long distance too.

In before gear sages. Pic related... I took it and it is my dog.

18-55 IS.
Either 28mm or 35mm something or other, for when you need the speed, like at night or something.
50/1.8 because it's so cheap.

You're saying you're going to be using this for hiking... are you sure a non-weatherproof body will be fine?
