Bought some glass Anonymous
Hello /p/

Just ordered a Sigma 10-20 on Ebay to use with my D80. Does anyone on /p/ have this lens and have some shots or advices to share?

Inb4 rich-fag telling me that Sigma is some cheap shit.
Inb4 Canon-fag telling me that Nikon is some cheap shit.
Inb4 Ken Rockwell telling me to wait for his futuristic Nikkor 9mm 2.8 lens

when the lens you have already bought arrives you'll be able to take all the samples you will ever want. moron.

sage for pointless gear thread.

1. You'll need to compensate for barrel distortion with every shot you take.

2. Should have bought a Tokina 11-16 instead.

3. Good choice with choosing Nikon over Canon (seriously).

1 is the reason why I'd spring for the Canon 10-22 over the Sigma 10-20 on a Canon body.

Shoot RAW, have it autocorrected perfectly. Is made of fucking win.

When you make your livelihood, you don't choose the brand that offers an equivalent, even similar system, you choose the brand that is a trustworthy and time-tested tool. Thus, Nikon. There are always distinctions to be made between Nikon and Canon, but I've often heard this statement, and I believe it: Canons are the best cameras made by engineers, but Nikons are the best cameras made by photographers. It's a generalization, but that feels very true to me.

Lenses aren't made from tupperware, but I might consider buying Tamrons if they did a Tupperon/Tamware brand cross-over.

Good lens, I am ordering one with my 40D, soon.

I'm sure the plastic that canon uses is better than tupperware.

No, plastic shatters into a thousand fucking pieces. Metal gets a small scratch and you keep on going.

search sigma 10-20 on flickr to get a massive amount of sample images. from all ive seen its a decent lens thats very good value for money.
>>197647
lol yeah nice one ken.

fuck ken rockwells shitty reviews. "lol tonika is better." its not.

Not possible to obtain that number in one strike by any means. Plastic is not a crystal.
>> Anonymous
>>198305
Car manufacturers use plastic in the places that are more likely to be hit during a crash (the bumpers). Previously they used metal. Metal, when dented, stays dented, plastic has more tensile strength and can pop back into its original shape, it also is better at absorbing impacts. Also, you're full of bullshit, show me one test where plastic shatters into a thousand piece. I think you don't know what plastic is.

You have to bend a cd past 30 degrees to break it, and it doesn't shatter into a million pieces.

>>198391

Some plastic is really shitty and brittle. That's probably what he was thinking of.
>> Anonymous
>>198384
>Plastic is not a crystal.
Actually, it is. While many people judge plastic not to be a crystal based on its superficial characteristics, this is in fact false. Plastic, you see, is an amalgamation of a number of soft metals, which together form the brittle metal we today colloquially call pvc. As we all know, metal is a crystal.
In other words, plastic is a type of crystal, qed.
>> Anonymous
>>198426
No, you couldn't be more wrong about everything ever.
>> Anonymous
>>198396
canon lenses definitely aren't made of pvc. Plus, no matter what, if you drop a lens, plastic or metal, it'll break anyway.
>> Anonymous
>>198391

Car manufacturers use plastic (and STYROFOAM) in car bodies instead of having metal bumpers because it's more expensive to replace and they can make a boatload in selling aftermarket parts.

Have you ever tapped something with a plastic bumper?
With a metal bumper you got maybe a dent, but your bumper was still functional.
Plastic bumpers are good for ONE HIT before they have to get replaced. Totally replaced. Because they're only rated for a single impact.

>>198430
We're not throwing our lenses into the ground. The impact from a drop of say, 5 ft, is around the same as a 3km/hr impact.

moron... learn to use maths and a little common sense.

Bearing in mind that with air resistance the resultant speed will be a little lower, but due to the average density of a lens, this will be negligable, say around -10%, given that terminal velocity will not be reached in that space of time as well.

S = Displacement = 1.52 m
U = Starting speed = 0 m/s
V = Finishing speed = ?
A = Acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s2

V^2 = U^2 + 2AS

V^2 = 2 x 9.8 x 1.52
V = 5.458m/s, converted to km/h and rounded to the nearest whole number = 20km/h.

the tokina 11-16 won't even work on nikons without the AF motor

so it fails

okay, that's more nikon's fault but still

Oh, because it doesn't autofocus with three gimped models, it fails?

I guess the legendary 28/1.4 became worth nothing to someone with a D50 as soon as the D40 came out?

And the guy with a F3 should've just tossed his Noct-Nikkor in the garbage once the F4 came out?

Come on. I don't know much about the lens- ultrawides and zooms aren't my thing- but if it's fail it's not because you made the wrong decision in your local Best Buy.
