If you didn't have any lenses already and you were going to upgrade to either the Canon 40D or the Nikon D300, which would be a better choice? All things considered, price, lenses, performance, ISO, all that.

I'm kind of torn.

D300 is a hands-down better camera. canon and nikon stagger their models by price and features rather than compete directly.

the D80/D90. then there's the Rebel series, then D40. The only cameras in the lineup that really come close to competing directly are the two entry full frame cameras, 5D mk2 and the D700.

I'm a heavily invested Canonfag and I have handled both of these cameras and they are really excellent, well worth the premium over the D40/D60's.

Just bought a d300 tonight as an upgrade from my 3.5 year old D50. I've shot with the 40D many times and I like everything about the D300 more.

Oh and get the grip.
