Is the D60 using a new sensor, or is it the same as the D40(x)?

Just buy one you indecisive fuck. It won't make any real difference to you.

all manufacturers build their cameras to a price point. if two cameras cost the same amount, they will perform (more or less) the same. failure to understand this basic tenet is what leads to pointless brand rivalries, which in turn spawn more misunderstanding. it's a self-perpetuating whirlpool of stupidity.

Is the name fence some sort of Ironic statement of indecisiveness?
Or do you just sell stolen goods...

nah, i forget the meaning. it's been with me for a while. what i SHOULD do is become really familiar with the different types of fences, and then work that into my persona.

"bullshit! your preference for canon is the exact same goddamn reason why everyone goes for half-cross double chain link! it's sooooo trendy!"

of course, image quality will be the same. But what about the features? Does Canon's live view make it a better purchase over the Nikon? Does Nikon's fast start-up make it a better purchase over the Canon? Stuff like those.

They're essentially the same: a budget camera. But there are subtle differences here and there.

That depends, do you want live view? Would you rather have faster start-up time? Do you want to use Canon lenses, or do you want to use Nikon lenses? Do you like the control layout and menus on the 450D or the D60? Which ones feel better in your hand? That is how you select a camera, not based on some nebulous criteria of what is "better" or what someone on the internet recommends.

I know which one I would choose, but that doesn't mean you should choose it too.

Why would an advanced user be buying an entry-level camera?

Exactly.

Because the advanced user has overgrown her Powershot A620 and wants a better camera, but isn't willing to shell out cash for a D80 or a 40D

My 2 cents:

D80 and 40D are significantly more win than entry-level DSLR's. And besides, either of the two higher bodies will probably last longer than the entry-level ones, both in features and in holding up to wear-and-tear.

wait for the cameras to show up at your nearest best buy and go manhandle them. whichever feels the most intuitive in your hands, buy that one.

it's not about features when you're buying one of the cheapest cameras in a manufacturer's line up.

You can't go wrong with either one of them, so just go with one. If you know lots of people with Canon gear, go Canon. Likewise for Nikon. They can help you out a lot better if they have the same system.

Which one can autofocus with more than a fraction of its manufacturer's lenses?

450D.
No AF motor in the D60 is quite shitty.
