I've got a question about a critique I received on this shot via the Fred Miranda forums. Apparently, the waterfall's highlights are "blown out." Only a sliver of the picture where the falls meets the water is pure white, so I don't understand how they are blown out, and in my opinion, it doesn't look bad at all. In fact, it looks just like the scene looks in real life.

tl;dr why do people bitch about blown highlights so fucking much?

I never said that only wide angles are good for landscapes. I said that the idea that wide angles aren't good for landscapes is a bunch of bullshit. Yes, telephoto lenses are good too.

Your rocks _are_a little contrasty in my opinion, and the water could have used a little less exposure - but it's a nice shot overall. If it were me I'd have stopped down as far as possible or reasonable for the lens (maybe f/16), underexposed about 1/3 stop and left the shutter open (maybe using an ND if I had to) for about 2 seconds. Makes nice smooooooth waterfalls. :)

I don't know why people bitch SO much about blown out highlights. I think it's just something that old photographers used to complain about.. and it's just passed on as something bad.
IMO it usually looks bad and distracting. But in some cases it's not a problem at all.
With your photo I don't think it's an issue.
Because to me, that's what a sunny waterfall looks like as well.

I'll do that next time. I actually didn't have a tripod with me, so this shot and the others which I posted before were all handheld.

Same way people bitch about noise or whatever, getting hung up on the technical stuff because that's all they've stretched their brain to understand about photography.

A little darker tone there would be good, but it won't make the photo any better or worse, really.
