It bothers me when there are people on here claiming to be great photographers (and some in fact have a few good shots) but only use point and shoots. I see a lot of great photos from a lot of people in this and other groups and I feel like it discredits them a little, like "hey, anyone can do this, check it out". Maybe I'm just hating a little but just thought I'd vent.

are we raging?

Someone asked me recently if my camera was 35mm or digital, whilst taking photos in a nightclub just after twisting the body round to show photo to drunkan idiots.

"im a photography student, leme borrow your cam"

P&S's are well capable of taking good shots. It's just that dSLR's are more capable and offer more freedom.

I mean, I could easily use a P&S for studio shots just as well as a dSLR (pic related) but you rarely ever see any really good low light / fast motion / sports shots taken with P&S's.

Oh, and the cheap macro they're capable of.

i'm sure that 95% of the good photos on /p/ are taken with a dslr. Unless you're calling d40s and rebels point and shoots (which would make you an idiot). You're completely wrong.

Who the fuck cares? I use large format, but if someone can make as much of a compelling image using a fucking phone, then so be it. It's about content, composition, and yes, technical sides do matter. However, technical importance does not equal that a good camera should be used.

I don't care either way, a good picture is a good picture no matter what it was taken with.
However just to shake things up a little, heres a picture taken with a Casio Z120 (shitty little P&S)

I use a point and shoot almost exclusively. It has a sharp lens, a viewfinder and other ergonomics I like, manual controls, and raw, which is all I really ask of it, in no particular order. There's definitely tons of shitty ones that lack all of those, but there's many good ones that have them.

The silent shutter is a big help for the main thing I shoot (people, up close) and that's the main reason I use it.

Since full frame DSLRs beat the quality of medium format film (I haven't seen any comparisons between APS-C and 120, but the difference can't be much either way), Full frame and APS-C DSLRs are the new 120 (67 and 645, I guess), and small sensor cameras are the new 135: smaller sensor, markedly grainier/noisier at high sensitivies, but still with their own uses. Alex Majoli, for instance, uses point and shoots quite a lot.

What OP is really saying ...
It bothers me when there are people on here who shoot better photos with cheaper equipment then me . I spent more money then that should make me a better photographer, right??

lol...

what p&s are you using?

The only reasons why I'm getting an SLR are for shooting in in low-light and speed of use.

Yeah, fuck superior image quality.

P&S I have used ...olympus D-600L/ olympus c-2500l--would not recommend for they are very noisy the 2500 more so . but I like their colour. finally got larger smart media cards for the D600... was using only one 4 meg card .
Olympus 2100uz.... very good zoom, the view finder tiring on the eye . only uses smart media which is hard to find .

Casio something or other ... got stolen ...was nice, focus and colour also the menu was easy to navigate ,but no view finder

fuji s 602 good camera only fault is that it has buttons on the barrel so accidentally can hit one , and don't like the menu .

Looking to buy a real DSLR now for my own use since the photos I have sold till now have been for use online ( banners and ads for real estate) and for business cards .

Quality and sharpness from my point and shoot is just fine for my purposes. The only problem is that there is always a degree of noise present.

here.

Panasonic DMC-FZ8. I almost never use the huge zoo; I just like the way it handles and the lens is surprisingly sharp- smaller image area to cover (and hence larger relative size possible) means less compromises are needed to get the crazy 6-72 zoom range than on similar range lenses for larger formats.

*zoom

To elaborate a bit, I use it almost always at 7mm, sometimes 14.5mm, then 12mm, then very rarely 6mm (the wide end) and everything else not much at all. 6x crop, so 42, 87, 72, and 36.

The zoom is stepped, so it's easy to learn to count the steps and use it like a set of primes.

is basically where i stopped. it doesnt matter how the shot was taken, if the pictures good its good.
why would it be better if he took it on a $1000 canon?

if you can shoot good pictures with a p & s then good for you. you're probably just pissed that your pictures taken with a dslr are worse than the p & s pictures.
