Lighting and buggery. Anonymous
Hello /p/.

I'd like to try experimenting with lighting and such, finding that the flash on my camera is too harsh, but I really have no clue at all where to begin. What kind of gear do I need and where do I get it? What about the kind of lighting that you have on a tripod with the white umbrella?

Any tips or links to guides for this sort of stuff would be great. <3

http://strobist.blogspot.com is the definitive source for teaching newbies about lighting.

I don't have any good suggestions for the buggery, though.

In case you don't want to blow $1000 just to see whether you like playing around with off-camera flashes, bear in mind that you can get flashes, umbrellas, reflectors, light triggers, etc. from china (dealextreme, and others like it) for a small fraction of the price. Not exactly pro quality of course.

DealExtreme ship to the UK, right? If so that would be great. Pro quality isn't really neccessary for what I want to do. :3

Also, what are the things that the external flashes sit on? Is it just normal tripods?

dial in flash underexposure

also use manual to expose the background properly in the dark
