Hey /p/, I need your help

I wanted to take up digital photography and wanted to get a nice affordable camera to start. I ran across this and was wondering if I should go for it:

Nikon D40 100 or so clicks
Carrying Case
4GB Memory card
Tripod
and a few more extras like USB cables, UV filters etc

For $400.

Should I bite the bullet?

No. D40 is not for serious photographers.

Get a D50, at least it'll let you use the cheap good lenses.

(The D40 will not autofocus with most Nikon AF lenses. The ones it will autofocus with either suck, or are very expensive, or are very expensive and of limited ues.)

I'm pretty sure it comes with the factory lens. All the photos are with the lens, but I'll ask just to be sure.

well, this is what i say you should get, for a long while i've been using the canon digital rebel Xti, i enjoy it. but your talking affordable, where that nikon costs 4 large, the digital rebel costs roughly 1 grand! but in my opinion its worth it.

what add-ons would you recommend for it? such as lenses and filters

What will you be taking pictures of?

The two main important things it does are elimate reflections- like, say you're shooting a picture and in the background is a shiny window, but you don't want yourself reflected in it- and do this nice effect on the sky. It darkens it, to put it simply, but there's more to it than that. Wikipedia "photographic filter" and it'll have examples.

Also add:
"Photographic lens"
"Prime Lens" though there's some bullshit about a "traditional meaning" at the bottom you can ignore.
"Zoom lens"
"Normal lens"
"Wide-angle lens"
"Telephoto lens"

And study the work of great photographers to learn the non-technical side of photography. These websites are good for that:

magnumphotos.com
masters-of-photography.com
jamesnachtwey.com (One guy, but his work isn't found either of those places, and he's probably the most talented photographer alive today.)
