Refurbished. Yes or no? Anonymous
How do you feel about buying refurbished DSLRs? (or even a film SLR, as I'm looking to get into film more) I'm interested in refurbished because I want to buy a variety of lenses so I want to save as much money as possible.

Is it something to stay away from? And I'd like real experience, not just elitist opinions.

Buying used will usually save you much more than refurbished, Depends on what camera you are buying and where you live, theres a lot of online reputable sellers out there. I buy 90% of my camera gear used, and Often my resale is identical to the price I paid for the item.

What Camera body are you looking for?

make sure youu go with a store that you trust and you KNOW will be there for you in the future, that's all i'll say

I'm looking at Pentax K10D at the moment. It seems the best for me, though I haven't gone to a store yet to test how they feel when I hold them. I guess I'll do that after the holidays. Unfortunately I haven't even seen any refurbished for it, so I might have to go with Canon or Nikon.

What are some good online sellers? So far I've just been checking Adorama and newegg.

Oh and where would you get used from? The process of buying higher end cameras is the most confusing thing I have ever dealt with. haha

Standard advice: Keh is good for used equipment. Their rating system is a little vague, but excellent and up should be fine.

Excellent and up is basically new
Good is great
Bargain is usually fine, a little hit-or-miss
Ugly ranges from average personal-sale-used to sort of beat but working fine
I've never been displeased with anything I've bought from KEH and they heavily under-rate stuff. I've got stuff BGN that looked like it had never been mounted to a camera.

Keh appears to be down ATM.
not sure if its just me or not

B&H Photo also has a pretty good rating system when selling used cameras. Something like a 9 or 9+ is effectively new and can probably save you a few pennies.

Thanks a lot for the help, you guys. KEH looks like an amazing site. I'll look into B&H as well!
