Masking! NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
I’m always surprised by how many photographers don’t seem to know how to do this. Masking in integral in post processing work by allowing you to edit separate parts of an image by the use of an adjustment layer. Here is a quick tutorial on basic masking. This tutorial is designed to be appropriate for relatively new users to Photoshop.

First we’ll cover basic masking used for vignette or selective darkening of parts of an image. The first layer in the example image is a simple light vignette layer. To do this you first create a new layer and then paint it black. To make it easier to target with the gradient tool, change the new black layer’s opacity down to 50% or so. With black selected as your main color (as shown), click the gradient tool, marked 1. Next you need to choose the gradient type. Click on the area labeled 2. Then select black to transparent, labeled 3.

Next select the gradient shape you want to use, for vignette you use the circle tool. Finally make sure you have the mask selected by clicking where the 4 is located. You are now ready to create a vignette on your image by drawing with the gradient tool on your image. Click on the center of your image and drag out to the edge. You can drag past the edge to create a softer vignette effect. Then adjust how dark you want it by adjust the opacity.

Masking to edit different zones follows the same basic steps. Create an adjustment layer by clicking where the 5 is located. Then adjust your image with a certain area in mind, so you would adjust the sky and ignore the appearance of the ground for instance. Next you click where the 6 is located to create a mask. Follow the same steps as above to get ready to make your mask, but instead of selecting the circle shape, select the one that goes from white to black and use that create your mask and there is no need to adjust the opacity level. In the image shown I have adjust the ground and the sky separately.

Now suppose that the area you want to edit is not as easy as a line between the sky and land, how would you go about that? There’s multiple ways to go about it, and which is best really comes down to what you are editing, but the basic idea is the same. Just have the layer mask selected and with the brush paint out the areas with black that you don’t want effected. There are more ways to create a custom mask than the brush tool, but that is the most basic of the ways to do it.

well questions comments additions?
