NEW RULES OF /p/ THREAD!!!!!

Post your new rules for /p/ here.

1) If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.
2) You have no right to criticize anyone else's photos until you can prove that you could do better.

Fucking resize to 1000 on the long side unless asked to full size.

What kind of rule is that?
Do you mean that everyone should post with tripcodes?
I kind of agree with that but trolls would just copy people's codes and make havoc.

Your 2 is wrong. It should be, you can only criticize photos if you can make it constructive and give a suggestion to make it better without bias (vignetting works SOMETIMES).

Simon Cowell can't sing and Roger Ebert can't direct.
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH

>It should be, you can only criticize photos if you can make it constructive and give a suggestion to make it better without bias (vignetting works SOMETIMES).

What, so do you mean something like:
"Your models look awkward and your composition is shitty go back and reshoot the photos DC you thundering faggot."
>> Anonymous
>>198676
>Your models look awkward and your composition is shitty go back and reshoot the photos DC you thundering faggot. Try making your models comfortable, talk to them often and make eye contact so you don't just become some voice behind a lens. Read up on composition and follow traditional methods and angles before moving on to more creative work.

Fixed. Because, fuck, I take enough photos that archiving everything would be a bitch. Then again, my definition of back up is probably different from yours. Standard is on two hard drives in two different machines. Backed up includes both online archival, in-fireproof-safe archival, and being on at least three hard drives all in separate machines in at least two different houses.

>>198660

1), what utter horseshit. a better rule would be, 'create a complex declarative sentence with meaningful terms directly related to your experience re this photo, and make sure it is free of /b/. use /b/ spray liberally if needed.'

2)are you joking? who the fuck is going to look at your photos? if you need to restrict your audience to those so discriminating, so intelligent, talented and experienced, and obviously idle MasterPhotors, who eagerly await your idiot submissions to leaven with constructive artistic and craftmans-like criticism our of the goodness of their hearts, FOR FREE, and must needs never show your work to anyone who SHAN'T UNDERSTAND, then man up and go to art school, were you can enojoy your obvious SUEPEERREEORITY in the company of your peers, who will obviously regard you with mingled awe and gladness.

trust me, they will.

here's a 3) spend less time bawling about internet hate on a free, anonymous image board and take more photos.

i ignore rule 3 .

that's not bad. me, i use RAID on primary storage computer, have a NAS box at home(also w/RAID) that mirrors my primary storage, and backup to permanent media after every offload from the camera's media. 1 shoot= 1 DVD.

if i were to go nuts, i'd make a weekly visit to the safe deposit box, but i'm actually not important, so i don't.
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>198779
Honestly, I dont' trust RAID. I've just seen too many screwups. My experience with RAID probably isn't the norm, but...goddamn. It seems _much_ more reliable to have it stored in multiple computers on separate drives. With the price of hard drive space these days, I just can't see a problem.

Major things that turned me off RAID:
1. Computer power supply malfunctioned. Fried every single hard drive. Wouldn't have been too bad to recover if it hadn't been raid - just replace the controller ICs. With RAID, though, it was never recovered - couldn't find enough good controller ICs, and even if they were found, the array might still have been toast.

2. Controller card died. Was not replaceable. Array gone.

3. Power failure or spike of some kind. Overwrote something critical. Bye bye array.

So I'm reasonably sure RAID would be a good idea, but I just can't be arsed with the problems and just store my stuff on three hard drives in three machines in two houses. Works well so far.
>> Anonymous
>>198782

i understand your concerns- but i'm an expert, so it's a good solution for me. also, technology has improved since 1996-;)

the rules for backup are simple- copy in the computer, copy off the computer, and make another, just in case.

General rules:
-No brand bullshit.
-No copypasta or other stupid reposts. This includes prior work of someone set up to be mocked/degraded.
-"That guy" shoops are excluded from the previous rule.
-Absolutely no impersonation of other posters.
-Sage all posts in gear threads that aren't going to/haven't fostered good discussion. Somebody's thread asking whether to get the XSi or D60 does not need to go to the top of Page I.

Rules for posting photographs:
-This is and, unfortunately, has to be a worksafe board. If someone's prudish boss would have a problem with it, just stick it in /s/ or post a link to it elsewhere on the Internet. It's not hard. A girl with nothing but panties and pasties on her tits would get someone into just as much trouble as a totally naked girl.
-Fucking resize, to the size you want your photograph displayed on the screen. Keep in mind most people today use 1024x768 monitor resolution.
-You do not want your photograph displayed at more than 1000 pixels on the longest side, because we will flame the hell out of you if you do. Ask if you want to post a higher res, as a courtesy.
-Post JPEG. No matter what you think about PNG files, 4chan's servers can't take them en masse. You are not the special exception.
-For the love of God, do not post a link to your DeviantArt account. Save yourself and us the trouble.
>> Anonymous
>>198828
Rules for Criticism:
-What you like/dislike ? what is good/bad.
-Aesthetic and stylistic choices are not to be attacked. For instance, if someone posts a boring picture in black and white, the appropriate response is not "INSTA-ART GTFO DEVFAG!!11!," but rather "Your photograph is boring, because it lacks a subject/doesn't have a very creative composition/etc." Something like "This might be better in color/without vignetting/with vignetting/with a longer focal length/with a shorter focal length" is acceptable if it's accurate and not the same as telling Cartier-Bresson to get himself some Velvia and a 16-35L.
-Criticism is not limited to the aesthetic properties of a photograph. Content is also up for discussion, and indeed, should be addressed.
-Criticism has two goals: discussing the work and advising the creator how to improve. All criticism posts should work towards one or both of these aims.
>> Anonymous
>>198828
One more rule for posting photographs: Do not become a hostile tool when someone offers a reasonable critique of your work.
>> Anonymous
>>198824

err, to prove my actual worth to the non-photographers posting on a photo board? even it is is commercial, it's craft, skill, talent and time spent, not a polaroid. fuckin a it's even watermarked, albeit somewhat hastily.

compared to your portfolio, it is godlike, a mystery, unreachable, olympian, etc.

you obviously can't measure up b/c you can't post a photo.

what's the matter, is your photo poster machine broken? i guess it is, because you can't post. you are postinde-findable, you are post-limited, you are photo-de-re-folderolled, you are photo-inhibited, possibly pho-tarded, your ass smells like pho-to-failure, lack of sani-pho-tation, you are photo-rofl-iffic.

Next time I suggest you use a lower ISO, or at least turn off your gain. The noise is quite heavy, and really doesn't fit with the smooth look of the car. The subject is the suitcase, but this is quite a boring subject for a picture.
Why would I want to see that suitcase? It's not like I've never seen a suitcase before. Also, I suggest you use a small fill in light from the front row of the car. There are some minor annoying shadows on the suitcase, because of your sharp and right on key-light. I suggest to use at least a diffuser. Or a soft-box, if you have access to one of those.
The picture is also really warm, you definiatly do not want to use auto white balance when you're shooting stuff with artificial light. Next time use custom white balance, please. Also, turn off your Hard sharpening settings on your camera. It would be better to do this in post-processing. You're also shooting with your aperture wide open for your lens, which won't do your lens justice. It would be better to get some more light, or just use a longer exposure time (Tripod is ofcourse mandatory, but it already was anyhow.) and get some more sharpness at say, f/8.
I hope this will help, and next time you take a picture, take a thought as well. "Why would anyone want to see this? Why am I taking a picture of this? Why is this special?" and try to convey those thoughts into your composition.
Overall, I really really think this picture sucks.

It used to be where I'd come and read only about informative gear threads, and see nice photos, but those days are gone. What I end up seeing a lot of time are those /b/ photographers posting snapshots saying "HAI YOU LIKE MY FOTO!>?" and such. It's just getting annoying.
I think another important point to touch on would be the intent to find what other people think. Contribute to your on photo, so people don't see that you're a troll. Example:
Hey guys, I'm really not sure of this landscape. Is the lens flare in that corner really that distracting, because I think it adds a nice effect. Is the subject interesting? Etc. Etc...

Sorry dude, /p/ has been shit for months now.
I do agree that it's gotten worse, but I think that has more to do with the Tripfags (DC in particular) getting all butthurt and being assholes more than it does with there being more trolls.

There's a reason that DC gets the most hate, and that's because he has the biggest ego of the tripfags here and nothing to back it up with.

>There's a reason that DC gets the most hate, and that's because he has the biggest ego of the tripfags here and nothing to back it up with.

Haha. Hahahaha. Hah. What, was Beethy asking for it? It being having an image calling him a "fat shit" posted in every thread of his and some art nudes of his lover being treated like third-rate porn?

And DC is one of the better tripcode-using photographers and posters on the board.

Also, Some copypastas there should be:

-AC's Powershot A-series copypasta, posted whenever someone asks for a serious point and shoot. Amend it with something about CHDK.
-A copypasta for people coming in from outside asking about what to buy to take pictures of their friends at parties or whatever. I have no clue in this; anybody know what the "A-series" of this is?
-Copypasta on commonly asked technical questions. We can make these as they come up; I remember AC made a couple.
-Copypasta on what entry-level DSLR to buy, something along the lines of:
>> Anonymous
>>198953
"All the entry-level DSLRs are pretty much equal. Go to the store and try them out, and buy the one that feels best to you, that you like the best. Try all the models available: [insert current models here].

However, if you feel yourself going for the D60, buy a used D50 instead. It's an older camera, but it will autofocus with all of Nikon's lenses. The D60 is limited in this regard.

It can't hurt to look into used models from the other makers, either, to save you some money or get some feature that was deleted along the line.

Also, note that megapixels don't matter much at all; they're really the least important factor when it comes to image quality. Six megapixels will do you for almost any size print, and as far as quality, six megapixels is all National Geographic requires of its shooters.

Lastly, when you do pick a camera, look at the lenses available. Something you'll almost always want (for everyone except Olympus) is a 50/1.8 or 50/1.7. These are always very cheap and good, around $100, and are excellent for portraits and low light. Another improvement on your kit lens is a 28/2.8 or 35/2; these are relatively cheap "normal" lenses, that is, lenses that approximate the way human eyes see the world. They're all-purpose workhorse lenses; some photographers have actually used pretty much just one of these.

Before you buy, check resellerratings.com to make sure you're not getting scammed. The best places to buy new (as opposed to used) gear online are bhphotovideo.com and adorama.com.

Good luck, and when you come up with some good photographs, feel free to share them with us."

Until a few months ago, tripfags were some of the best posters here, along with a number of anonymous. Tripfags were tripfags because they posted consistent work, and it's useful to recognize somebody over the long term. Like Heavyweather, NatureGuy, Vincent, etc.
Beethy seems to be the start of a bunch of new tripfags, which coincided with a bunch of really shitty anonymous. These tripfags seem to be defined by average photos, but enough photoshopping to piss off /p, which is why some people still think they're trolls. I just think they didn't lurk enough.
Even more recently, we've had even more shitty anons come in, screaming about tripfags ruining /p, and trolling all over the place. Dunno if it's due to summer, 7chan being down, or what, but it's really, really bad right now. Look at this thread, the image in OP should've been removed already, and a thread like this should not have this many posts.
OP's "rules" are irrelevant when we have a bunch of b& yelling about butthurt, and fat, and everything else at the slightest provocation. Say something nice? This is /p, idiot, just make it constructive, or lurk moar, and you'll learn. Don't criticize without proof? That's bullshit too, it's just an excuse that lets posters shoot down any criticism without changing. Fuck that. Folks? Just don't act like dumbass twelve year olds. /p is not /b.
