Hey Guys.

So I got a Canon 30D for Christmas (lol, DSLRs seem like a popular gift judging by /p/) and have been playing around.

I have a question for you: What the hell is happening to my EXIF data? I've been shooting in RAW since I figure it'll give me a better chance at getting a usable image. Once on my computer I can see all the EXIF data in Canon's bundled software. I open the image in Photoshop and adjust things (or not) in the RAW conversion thing and then click "open" (with or without holding alt to "save previous EXIF"). I can still see all the data in File -> Image Properties. Back in Canon's software I can see only a small subset of the info and when uploading it to another site it claims there was NO info at all.

Wtf am I doing wrong? I'm not copying/pasting things to a different file.

Images related.

You are doing nothing wrong. Photoshop is.. it kills the EXIF data whenever you save it in a new format (eg *.cr2 -> *.jpg) or just save (overwrite or write a new file) an existing jpeg.

Personally I do not know if there is a fix (of sorts) for this, maybe someone else can enlighten us.

I think it only does that when you use save for web. I save to jpeg in the regular Save As... dialogue and my EXIF makes the transition fine.

Make sure you are saving the image in 8-bit mode and not 16 or 32.

Hmm I think I've got it, thank you. :)

Now another question if /p/ is feeling generous: Do these spots look like dust? Is it possible to tell if it's on the mirror or CCD from their size etc? It happens in the same places on both my lenses.

Isn't it better to edit in 16-bit mode?

You may have dust on your sensor. If that's the case, take your camera to a camera place and ask them to show you how to clean it. Usually a few quick gusts from an air bulb should do it, but other times it can require more extensive liquid cleaning.

Oh god, I just realised that the mirror is only for the viewfinder. >.<

don't all canon eos cameras come with the program where you take a picture of a white backround and then you load the picture into the sofware and the program will correct dust spots on the sensor by editing the picture?
