I'm looking for a camera because I look at all these cool pictures and photography has really captured my interest. My coworker recommended this but I'm sure he's no photograper so what do you guys think?

It's not bad. I just got the canon g7 and I'm very happy with it.

S3 IS can't be beat for the price.

I have a 4-5 year old powershot s200 and I love it (aside from it's now being years obsolete; ie. the woefully low pixel rating and small screen size) but the thing is a tank. Gone through more hell than I can speak of and still works fine!

oh yeah... My 4 film cameras (1 P&S and 3 SLRs are gathering dust) in favor of the s200.

I'd love to shoot more film but developing is expensive, all the printing is automated and digital anyway (unless you go to a higher end place), the actual film is goddamn expensive, and the chemicals/machinery cost make it nearly impossible to develop (color) at home; B&W isn't so bad... Digital is just so damn convenient.

Signed. Seriously, if you don't have/ don't want to spend huge amounts of money, or for some other reason don't want an SLR, the S3IS is the absolute best camera you can get. It's a masterpiece; it is only inferior to an SLR when it comes to ISO control (less options), lens (only one, of course), and that it doesn't do RAW.

It's also much more portable than an SLR, and, well, doesn't have an SLR mechanism: it has an actual mini-LCD in the viewfinder.

You already posted one of, if not the, best non-slr digicams on the market

I have a Canon s2is, the model before the s3. It works really well and takes long video (full memory card use). The problem is the image stabilizer is very sensitive, but it has a 12x zoom. I would have also liked more mega pixels, but you can't have it all. I've only had one problem (manufacturing defect), sent it in, and was repaired at no cost. I would recommend any Canon camera.
