I took this picture a couple of weeks ago before a "Lustans Lakejer"-gig.

Any thoughts?

The warm light that permeates the location is nice for an ad for a brochure, but hurts your subject. He seems to just blend right into the background even though he's upfront. Also, I think that the people in the back kind of detract the main focus in the picture.

Any idea how i avoid that? Shorter exposure time?

Ah ok. Im quite new with the whole photo thing.
Should i avoid automatic white balance when taking pictures inside?

It isn't that you should necessarily avoid these things, just realize that it is going to significantly alter the color in your photograph if you aren't paying attention.

Relative to your photo: I would have moved closer to your subject and opened the apeture as much as possible. There are three major things I see wrong here, one is that the background is too much in focus and draws away from your subject. Second, the menu/noteboard over the left shoulder is very distracting. Next, the foreground lighting. Due to the skin tones, the lighting, and your background, the face of your subject is washing out.

Outside, lighter color clothing, more neutral background (a tree, lawn, shrub,) and more light in the foreground.

If I remember right I was using the 50-200mm for this shot. So moving closer was not an option due to the long minimum focusing distance

Ok, I will try to remember to add as little distracting thing from here on.

Thanks for the critique

Change your depth of field, if possible. Although with the lighting showing in the photo, you may need a tripod.
