I have an epson 4490 and it's acceptable. I've made 16x20 prints from scans of 6x4.5 negatives that look great (as good or better than similarly sized prints from my D200) with it. 35mm scans would probably be suitable to up to 8x10 and still look good, but anything more might be stretching it. It's more than enough for web viewing. It has very good dynamic range for a cheap flatbed too, and handles dense velvia negatives pretty well.

The main problem I encounter with this scanner is maintaining film flatness. The holders aren't the best, and you can't put the film flat on the glass or it's slightly too close for focus and you get moire effects. I think a proper film holder would improve scan quality significantly and possibly put it in league with some dedicated film scanners.

Pic is a 100% crop of a fairly low-resolution scan (1200dpi) of a 6x6 velvia slide. A full res scan of 6x6 pulls a huge amount of data. Sharpness is the only major concern due to film flatness issues.

I also thought I'd add, there is some noise in the photo (no, it's not grain, you can't see any here). That's due mostly to the fairly aggressive unsharp mask filter I use to make up for the sharpness issues due to film flatness. The scanner itself produces pretty clean images, they just tend to get noisy when I use too much USM.

Nevertheless for the price I think it's about the best you're going to find. It beats the hell out of cheap camera store Frontier scans, not quite on par with a Coolscan 9000 though.

That particular picture was with a Kiev 88CM and an Arsat 80mm f/2.8.

The only medium format camera I have right now is a Yashica D with miscalibrated shutter speeds. I've been thinking about picking up a Pentax 6x7 or Bronica SQ-Ai lately, but just bought a D2x so it'll probably be a few months before I get anything.

500C/Ms are nice, I had one a few years back. But if you want anything other than the standard 80mm lens, particularly if you want a newer multicoated version, prices are still very high compared with other brands.
