Hi. /b/ sent me here. I'll just repeat what I asked there here.

I'm trying to decide what digital camera to get from Argos. So far, I've narrowed it down to the following:-

Vivitar V5188 5MP Digital Camera
Vivitar V7100 7MP Digital Camera
Vivitar V5355 5MP Digital Camera
Hitachi DS5060 5MP Digital Camera
Hitachi HDC-561E 5MP Digital Camera
Kodak C613 6MP Digital Camera
Kodak C713 7MP Digital Camera
Nikon Coolpix L10 5MP Digital Camera

Can't find cameras on Hitachi's websites, though, which doesn't help.

Comment too long. Clickhereto view the full text.

I'm just trying to use up vouchers. If there was something else I'd rather have there then I'd get that instead. But there isn't.

The only P&S worth having is a canon A series, so if you cant get one of those dont get anything.

Most (if not all of) us are digital/film slr users.

And truly, I can't see spending $200 on a camera when you could spend $400 and get something 100x as good.

And most of the people here come from the same boat. So when you come on this board asking about P&S cameras, no one will give you much love because they kinda suck, and there's not a tremendous amount of differentiation.

tl;dr: get the one that you think looks the best. And don't expect help here.

wut? Are you new on /p/ or something? P&S advice is given every so often, and is a complete different category of cameras. not better / worse, just different. I'd like to see you try to take pictures of people unnoticed with your D2.

In the end, I decided against Hitachi and Vivitar, which left me with a choice between the Kodak C713 and the Nikon Coolpix L10.

Pic related, as I took it with my new L10. Pixels!

Someone is sad they have a P&S.

Well. That's news to me. As a noob photographer I was under the impression many experts used compacts now, because they were approaching the quality of DSLRs.

...well, maybe for photojournalism, and outdoor shooting they would be sufficient.

you're reading too much strobist. no point and shoot is even close to a dslr in terms of quality (save for MAYBE the leica m8, but that's a big stretch). in fact, the development and capabilities of dslr's are skyrocketing into the upper stratosphere, while point and shoots are crashing into the ceiling.

case in point: iso performance. the d3 shoots a pretty fucking amazing (and unprecedented) ISO 6400. on the other hand, i've got a little canon powershot A550 that shoots a much noiser ISO 100 than my 4 years old Powershot A80, simply because it's got three more megapixels on a stamp-sized sensor.

long lengths + high fps for photojournalisim... dont think so (also robust weathersealed bodies?)

wide + superwide lenses with minimal distortion for landscape + even less noise i dont think so either.

Hey James Nachtwey carrys a point and shoot at all times... but hes never far from a massive canon... lucky SOB.

hurray for my nikon D80... Its not shit.

For shooting in daylight, compacts are fine, so long as one knows how to work them. Keep it ISO 200 and under and one can't tell the difference.

>Hey James Nachtwey carrys a point and shoot at all time
Maybe when he's working, but David Alan Harvey explicity said on his blog that Nachtwey only carries a camera with him when he's working, that they're close friends and even taught workshops together but he's never actually seen Nachtwey hold a camera at all.

"i literally have never seen them with a camera in their hands....or around their neck....or take a picture"- about Nachtwey and three other photographers.

There was a contest on his site where people had to guess out of eight photographers which four never carried cameras when not working and who David had never seen take a picture, and which four always carried a camera. Someone asked if the "never seen them take a picture" literally meant absolutely never, and Harvey confirmed it did. Nachtwey was one of the "nevers."
