Hi /p/, first time here. Any suggestions on a good camera I should buy? I want one that can do movies and takes fairly decent pictures.

This seems like a good deal and a good price. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD1000-Digital-Optical/dp/B000NK8EWI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-31487

Please tell me if my post is in the wrong place. Not looking for fanboy drama either while choosing a camera.

Canon makes nice compacts. Fuji ones are nice too, but they can cost more for the same sort of camera. Best to go on a model by model basis, but some brands are awful. Nikon makes bad compacts, even though they make top quality SLRs that are a joy to use.

Look at the Ricoh Caplio GX100, the Panasonic Lumix range and the Fuji Finepix range, particularly the Finepix F31fd.

Canon SD cameras are fine for very casual picture taking (vacations, family gatherings, etc). This one in particular is very compact even if compared to the previous SD models. It's a bit awkward to hold, for me anyway. I do like the minimalistic design, being more or less a complete rectangular prism. The others have curves and softened corners.

I think that this is a good choice, but depending on your tastes, the Canon Powershot A-series and G6 or G7 might be other possibilities as well. Check them all out.

It's worth having a look around for sample pictures too. Some of the modern compacts can produce impressive pictures if they are handled well. Not quite the same freedom as thousands of dollars worth of lenses and camera gear, but good value for money. I've seen some good art made with compacts by people who have the patience to learn them.

I love my SD450. What kind of pictures do you plan on taking with your Canon Compact?

Mostly planning to take personal photos. Like of me and my girlfriend, maybe other random photos. Nothing too fancy?

I have both the PowerShot 450 and 600. I'm not sure how the new 1000's are, but I like my 450 and 600 a lot. They aren't digital SLRs, but they sure take excellent pictures for a pocket camera. I would say they take the best quality pictures for their size.

It's a great camera. I just bought this but it's a very nice camera for $170. Not much zoom or manual features but I love the compact size and quality of photos.

Just about any Canon compact should be fine for the things you seem to want to do.

Also: /r/ pictures of your girlfriend.
