Hey /p/

I'm going to buy a more-powerful-than-point-and-shit-but-not-as-powerful-as-DSLR camera, like the Canon G9. (What are those kind of cameras called anyway?)

So far, I'm thinking of getting the Samusung NV24HD.

I'm looking for HD resolution and a great macro function.

Thoughts?

Go read some reviews of Samsung image sensors on Cnet, I think you'll want something a bit less shitty. If you're wanting a good high end compact camera, that isn't as expensive as the Canon G9, perhaps look up the Canon SX100, 10x optical zoom, and it's got a lot to offer for the price.

Really OP you don't know what you're looking for. There is no such thing as a camera being more "powerful" than another, unless you count how many nails Nikons can drive as rumored by /p/.

In fact, the G9 produces essentially identical images to its cheaper brother, the A720IS (correct me if I'm wrong with the model number, but there is an A series compact that uses the same sensor and processing). There is little to no difference in image quality when you upgrade between non SLRs.

What you do get when you get a G9 is pretty excellent controls. You pay extra money for features like the dedicated ISO knob and the control wheel, or similar things in other pro compacts like the Ricoh GR-D.

Just get a Powershot A series for now. It has what you need.

HDTVs = 1080i = 1920×1080 =~ 2.07 million pixels

Any camera you get sans (maybe!) a Sony S50 will far out resolve your TV/monitor.

There is only one camera that qualifies as such, Sigma DP1.

I was looking to buy a Canon G9 because my friend had one and it was pretty damn good for it's class. I went to go look at the grey-market camera shop and had the guy open up the G9 box for me then i saw that the D40 was about $60 cheaper so I went with the D40 instead.
If you want good quality but don't want the hueg (comparatively) size then the G9 is pretty-much perfect.

The Sigma DP-1 is fail. It has an SLR size sensor, sure, but it's severely gimped as a camera. The G9 is better than it in everything else but the advantages of a larger sensor. It's like a Clack versus a 135 rangefinder.

Sony released a bridge camera, the DSC-R1, a few years ago with a full APS-C size sensor and (I've heard) good features as a camera. IIRC, the lens was actually a Zeiss lens, i.e. not just a branding.

Sigma DP1 is not fail. Just because it isn't like every other camera in the market doesn't mean its shit. It might not be the "G9 for all-around-soccermom-photography" but its definitely better camera in terms of image quality.

I would choose DP1 anytime over every other compact camera.

Also inb4foveon is shit. It isn't.

Sensor is great, IQ is great, but it's even slower than my lever-winding Epson and has some serious control issues.

Now if they stuck that sensor and lens inside a G9...

Because image quality is more important than handling and responsiveness?

Enjoy doing candid street and photojournalism with a 20x24.

The ergonomics of a camera are the most important thing about it.

In a less extreme way of saying it, if you're willing to sacrifice handling and convenience for quality, you might as well get a DSLR, or MF/LF film. The entire point of sticking a big sensor into a compact is to get the convenience of a compact, which the DP1 really failed at.

The "HD" in the Samsung NV24HD refers to the camera's movie-taking mode. It records movies in 720p, 16:9 ratio, 1280x720 at 30fps. That is actually very good.

OP here

So I'm down to these choices:
Samsung NV24HD
Canon A590 IS
Canon SX100
Canon Powershot A series
Canon G9

Any more thoughts?

G9 is just an overpriced A720 IS

Buy a PowerShot, save the rest of the money for a DSLR. A720IS for <$200 is good enough.
