How do I work the Distance Scale on my lens, /p/? ;_;

i don't think they are ever accurate for zooms

if your subject is at 1 m, align the dot at 1 m

if your subject is at 0.2 m, align the dot at 0.2 and so on

on a side, note how does it work for a lens with old school distance markings

black dot is plane of focus, red dot is infrared

align black dot at subject distance, and the colored lines mean that, in this case, at f/11, f/16, f/22, the depth of field would span from X and X distance approximately, correct?

what about hyperfocal distance? is that marked anywhere? do i just look it up and remember it?

hyperfocal is dependent of DOF. Let's say you're at f/16 and you end up with a DOF of X to X. Set the last X to infinity and you're at hyperfocal.

it's at f/16, and focused at 2 m, the depth of field extends from 1.5 m to a bit more than 3 m

these are the numbers from dofmaster

Subject distance 2 m

Depth of field
Near limit 1.46 m
Far limit 3.2 m
Total 1.74 m

In front of subject 0.54 m (31%)
Behind subject 1.2 m (69%)

Hyperfocal distance 5.26 m

okay, so hyperfocal distance depends on aperture

so pretty much, my question is, is there a way to find out hyperfocal from the lens or do i have to write those down depending on apertures?

here, my camera is set to the hyperfocal distance for f/22 at 50mm. notice two things: 1) the color of the tick marks surrounding the black dot 2) the color of the numbers 22, 16 and 11. most old lenses are color coded in this fashion, or they are labeled (even better).

the span between the two matching tick marks represents the depth of field for that given aperture. keeping that in mind, hyperfocus is as simple as moving the infinity sign to your f/number's tick mark. that's it.

should be "this lens is set to..."

here's the same lens set to f/11. larger f/stop, smaller depth of field.

a small bit of clarification: hyperfocus doesn't necessarily mean that EVERYTHING will be in focus. it merely means that everything from the right tick mark (near focus) to infinity will be in focus. at f/11 on a 50mm, that means that only stuff from about 15 feet and on will be in perfect focus. at f/22, everything from 6 feet on will be in focus.

you can get sort of close by focusing about 1/3 into the scene, I've heard..

you can also figure out the hyperfocal distance (through maths or otherwise [charts]) and auto focus on an object at or around that part, or manual focus to that area.

dofmaster was already mentioned once in this thread. you can use that program to print out little dof scales for each lens. i use it. it's great.

that's also assuming your lens has a distance scale. a lot of new, cheap lenses don't.

well, the math is fairly straight forward... from wiki, its about (focal length)f^2/(f-stop*CoC)...

CoC is -basically- (as far as is necessary to know) the size of a dot that is considered acceptably sharp.. For a 1.6x crop DSLR, this is about 0.018mm...

So, all you need now is focal length and f-stop.. since its focal lenght (squared) divided by f-stop*CoC, you could make a note of common f-stops times 0.018...

for example.. f/4 = 0.072, f/5.6 = 0.1008, f/8 = .144, f/11 = 0.198, f/13 = 0.234, f/16 = 0.288

you could just use that, but you'd need a calculator on the road when you decide on the exact focal length you want to use.. OR, you could take a lens, and write out the focal lengths and then divide that number by the numbers you got above^..

for example, I've gotten - 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, and 20mm for one lens, and 18mm, 24mm, 35mm, and 55mm for another.

now from this you get, well, basically a chart like the above poster suggests, with your chosen values and chosen CoC size..

I only do this because all the charts I found had very specific focal lengths, all of which do not go lower than 17mm (I need 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm as I mentioned above)..
