Rebel or D40?

You be the judge!

I like my D40 more. Ergonomics-wise, I can't stand the XTi; it just doesn't feel comfortable in my hands. It's also cheaper and lighter and 6MP is plenty for me. Of course, with the XTi, you have a lot more options lens-wise, so if it fits nicely in your hands, you'll probably better off with the Rebel.

It feels a lot nicer with the battery grip. For me, anyways. Feels way too small in my hands without it.

The XTi feels fine in my big gorilla-hands.

Every single Canon body made in the past twenty years will work with every single Canon lens made in the past twenty years. Zero exceptions.

As for Nikon, take a look at this spreadsheet ( http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens.html ) to find out what bodies work with what lenses. Here's a further hint: the D40's light meter and autofocus system is crippled and has the smallest selection of lenses available of any Nikon body in history.

The solution is left as an exercise to the reader.

Buy a used cam instead, D50 or D70s is much better choice than the D40 IMO

Rebel XT can be found used for a similar price.

Also don't skimp out on glass, Buying old lenses that don't AF will be a huge pain in the ass, Metering or not, They usually have horrid CA and other issues.
Also 50mm f1.8 = win

psh you cant use an EF-S lens on a EF only body.

I have a D40 because my dad had an F1 and some old glass (I have to manual focus, of course), but the BIGGEST turn-off for me is the Rebel's shutter release. The button feels loose and doesn't have a good feel to it IMO. But it always comes down to your preference of ergonomics between these two.

Neither. both feel flimsy.

Get a used D50 which feels solid or an old 20D both are about the same price these days.

As far as canon or nikon... god this shit just gets old.

Go with whatever camera feels comfortble, both systems are now getting closer especially since the recent announcement of D300 and the D3.

Although the pro segment is really moot for this board since most of us will never buy one.
