is there a huge difference between sd/2gb-s ( 50x ) and sd/2gb-u ( 120x ) kingston card's ? what i have in mind is that maybe you don't even need that fast of card that the latest is - or do i ?

It all depends on if you have the patience to sit in front of your computer while the images transfer from the card to the hard drive. Higher write speed = less time waiting.

i see, but what about the actual writing to the card when i'm shooting something ? i'm not that much bothered by the fact that i'll have to wait for pictures to transfer to the pc, than the fact that it could limit me in any possible way while taking pictures ..

Unless you do sports photography, where you'll be shooting lots of frames in a row very often, it won't be too much of a problem to have a slower card. What actually happens is that the camera writes to an in-camera buffer, and then the buffer writes to the card. After a certain amount of images in a row (I'm not familiar with the D40 too much so I don't know about the buffer) you will need to stop shooting for just a few seconds usually while the buffer empties.

taken from letsgodigital.org :

"The Nikon D40 has a very large buffer. With 100 JPEGs in the very highest quality or 5 NEF pictures, it gives you enough to be going on with."

i guess that means that sd/2gb-s ( 50x ) will be good enough, thanks anon :)
