Anyone here ever notice, how all specialty camera stores seem to have the biggest assholes working there? Its like a universal law that there is at least one dick who will try to upsell something ridiculous, or try to sway you to their favorite product or just be a dick about everything.
All I needed was a Quick release plate for my Monopod, and I already had a good idea what sizes I wanted, Yet the salesman took about 30 seconds to decide that I couldn't possibly use a 400mm lens with a Monopod, and that I needed a wimberly + tripod setup to get any decent shots. And he wouldn't leave it alone even when I said I never use tripods...

I don't know why I keep going back to this store, but its basically the only one in town, and to save on shipping cost and time It's a bit more convenient.

Anyway I wanted to bitch, But I'm sure some of you have had the same experiences
Pic is actually related (Same guy told me theres no way a shitty Sigma 18-200 could autofocus fast enough for Motocross)

I wish I still rode... Too many injuries after time though... Afraid I cant help you with the douchebag problem though.
>> Anonymous
This is why I buy almost everything on the internet. I prefer to loose 2 days waiting for item rather than loose 20 minutes with sellers who know shit or try to persuade me that I need something better.

I also like your photo, being pretty close to the rider gives it really nice perspective

I gladly drive halfway across town to goto the actual photo supply store. I picked up a 40D in best buy the other day, the salesman immeadiatly told my I had to have it because I can shoot "five motherfucking frames a second."
I put it down and walked out.

Five *motherfucking* frames a second? A sales genius! :D

I wonder if he's sitting there right now in a corner, rocking back and forth while muttering about never getting the good leads?
>> else !L6xabslN96
>>108134
"i think 40D is a prety cool guy. eh can shoot 5 motherfuckin frames a second and doesnt afraid of anything"

most stores just hire ordinary sales people which go on some lame training course sponsored by the products they selling, so they can regurgitate a whole load of marketing bullshit to you.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>108137

It seems the days of knowledgeable and friendly sales staff are long gone.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
i hate the camera stores here. the markup is ridiculous. i'd be okay with that if they had a huge inventory, but they rarely have stuff that i'd actually use in stock (like, say, velvia 50, or astia in 120 size). the salesmen are all depressed photo grads who take out their creative frustration on anyone who shows even the slightest hint of knowledge with withering passive aggression.

"hey man, i wanna pick up some 4x5 film."
"don't you know that film is dead? everyone works with digital now."
"uh, okay. but do you guys have any 4x5?"
"lemme see. what kind are you looking for?"
"velvia."
"we don't have that. we only have E100G and Portra."
".. okay, fine. i'll take it. how much?"
"40 for ten sheets."

It doesn't help that he quoted the specs for the camera wrong as the 40D shoots faster than 5fps. He probably pulled that number out of his arse.

There were a lot of nice old film bodies that could go as fast as or faster than current digital SLRs. They're still well made cameras even if they are old. Of course the limitation with them was that you couldn't keep that up for 75+ frames non-stop and then still have room for more on the medium. ;)

>>108193
that one really shoots at 13fps, it's special edition that Nikon made for very limited number of japanese journalists during 1998 olympics
>> eku !8cibvLQ11s
>>108193

Probably just misremembered, because 30D has 5fps.
But still.

There's one local store and one chain, and both has the most unknowledgable staff I've ever encountered. And to think, the have fuckin Leicas on the shelf, but never have good film, let alone 120 film available. They mark up the price, and it never ever comes down. The only good use of them is to check if they have the odd old lens or an old speedlight I can pick up, even then they still mark up the frickin price. Thank goodness we have an importer type online store here. 5 days, and an SB800 will arrive.

I am used to the ignorant sales staff, but this store actually knows the equipment, they are just total dicks about what your purchasing. I don't think I've been there once and they not try to upsell me, usually 3 or 4x the price of whatever I was looking at.
I buy most of my stuff used, but sometimes I want the warranty and will buy new stuff from them. Then I have to go through the same shit every time...

Heres a similar pic, this guy was moving FAST (Hence motion blur at such a high shutter speed)

just wondering, but what iso was it shot at?

Is that some JPG settings, lol
>> Vincent
>>108335
ISO 200 for both shots, I really hated anything higher on the D70s, I prefered my D50 for the high ISO shots.

>>108341
Yes I shoot all sports in JPG, I take too many pictures in the couple hours i'm there, and I have too slow of a computer to justify taking RAW's.
RAW for me is only for Infrared pics and Panoramics.

Luckily my local camera store is pretty good. Every time I bring in film to be developed I usually only have to wait about 15 minutes. They usually have good prices, though have a tendency to blab. As nice as the owner of the store is when my parents went in to buy me a digital he suddenly forgot who I was.

Man at my local camera store the employees are really knowledgeable and nice, but they never have anything good in stock :(
Though it's a small Ritz franchise so I shouldn't expect much anyway.
>> Anonymous
I work at both large and small Ritz Cameras in the DC area and aren't an enormous dick. It could be that photography is a hobby rather than a career for me, but at least half of the employees are pretty decent people even if they don't always have a whole lot of experience.
>> Macheath !8b4g0BkNZg
I bought all my equipment online.

I mentioned this story here a little while ago. I saw in front of a department store that there was a Ritz inside so I decided to go check it out. I asked the salesman if they had the Canon 50 1.8 or the Tamron 17-50 2.8. The guy looked around and said that they didn't have any, but there were these Quantaray lenses he could sell me which would work just as well. I said no thanks, asked him for a brochure, and then walked out.
>> Anonymous
I order all my items online for i dont want to hear sales people telling me what i should my in their opinion.

Only time when i visit my local camera store is when i need to get some film developed.

Quantaray's awesome. Gotta love a company apparently still doing business in 2008 who doesn't have a website.
>> Anonymous
If you are truly awesome you don't need a website to tell anyone that. People just know.

Quantaray is Ritz's store brand of repackaged and rebranded equipment from other manufacturers. The lenses, for example, are rebranded Tamrons and Sigmas.

That's two things I've learned today!

I already have a cokin 'p' series filter kit with a few filters, I went in the store the other day to pick up a circular polarizer and the guy spent ten minutes trying to get me to switch systems to Hoya screw on filters. That was after I told him I already have the cokin stuff.
>> Anonymous
>>108957

The Cokin filters are optically inferior to the better screw-on ones.
>> Vincent
>>108971
Not for Graduated Neutral density stuff, They are amazing for that.

Circular polarizers maybe, I rarely use filters, I have too many lenses :(
>> Anonymous
>>108975

Cokin don't even use optical glass in their filters. The graduated filters are really the only thing worth getting really.
