If you're going to desaturate the photo, do it completely... oh, fuck it, it looks nice as it is.

not bad

Nah, I think I learned my lesson; don't take photos through windshields, dirty or clean.

Looks great. Partial desaturation (not selective desaturation) can produce some awesome results when it's used like this.

pretty kickass edit, OP

what's the difference

between partial and selective

desaturation
>> Anonymous !KRuMRaNDOM
Do one with all the signs and car-lights still colored.

Partial desaturation: Reducing the overall saturation of the photo to give it a grainy, washed-out feel. Can often be done to great effect.

Selective desaturation: Making everything in the photo B&W except for one thing. It's done as a way to shout ZOMFG LOOK AT THE SUBJECT OF MY PHOTO ZOMFGZOMFGZOMFG!!! without having to actually compose or light the picture properly. Generally done by complete hacks.

how do i partial desaturate?
>> Anonymous
>>137027
Method #1
Ctrl-U
turn down the saturation

Method #2 for PROS
Ctrl-J
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-B
tweak the B&W conversion
then adjust the transparency of the top layer

(Photoshop CS3)
>> Anonymous
can you do some RGB channel desaturation for massive combo too?

how do I desaturated PRIMARY COLORS?

Another method:
1. Duplicate layer
2. Desaturate layer with the channel mixer or desaturate
3. Set desaturated layer's mode to "Multiply"
4. Adjust transparency to taste

Pic related. It's an "After".

And here's the version straight out of the camera.

(Granted, the previous pic has some layers adjustment and a bit of zit-removal, too, so this isn't a perfect example. Just the one I had available to me)

In addition to the above methods, just tweak the saturation and vibrance sliders in ACR. Partially desaturating and then bumping the vibrance a bit can produce some good looks, especially if you fuck with levels or curves afterwards.

maybe you did it just to show how do i desaturate, who knows

but original is better

When all I had was Photoshop 5 Limited Edition, what I'd do was

1 copy the image and paste it into a second layer
2 paste the image into the quickmask
3 use that mask and paint over the whole layer with white
4 reverse the mask and do the same thing with black
5 fiddle with the transparency and see if Color Hue or Luminosity looked the best

I'm sure there was a more efficient way of doing it in PS5LE but I was a noob

Kinda agree. It wasn't a very good picture to begin with (stupid boyfriend blurred his way into the shot) so I was just sort of playing around with it because I was bored.
