Shot at the D80's Hi1.0 ISO equivalent to 3200. Ilford is cleaner than this shit.

It's an awfully noisy sensor. I never really cared for it. Preferred my D50's ISO 1600.

And maybe after I grow a pair, I can get closer. A cute little rangefinder and some black and white film would make this more fun.

protip: don't shoot ISO 100 on a Nikon or ISO 50 on a Canon, it clips highlights. Shoot at the base ISO if you can help it and want a really clean, noiseless file.

Shooting crackheads in the street is easy. Shooting them while they smoke crack, now you're talkin' CPOY shit.

base value?? 1st time i heard about that.
what would that be on an olympus 410 or how would i work it out/find out??
>> Anonymous
i like how on the second two, the small amount of grain adds to the black and white feel. but i agree. the Hi1.0 on the D80 is tricky, it's too noisy sometimes, like in the first shot.

Anyone heard anything about the new D90 yet?
>> Anonymous
>>244901
Yep. Personally, I'd like to see a sensor with an optimized base ISO of 400 or 640 or something. I've never been one for shallow depth of field.

Why don't companies, at least for their high-end models, make modular sensor backs? Switching from 1D to 1Ds or D3[H] to D3X is a simple as swapping a lens, and there's backs optimized for all sorts of different applications.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
I've got no idea about Olympus.

>>244907

that's actually a pretty good idea. i can't believe no one's thought of it yet.

D90 has the D300's sensor so it's about as good as APS-C gets noise-wise
>> Anonymous
>>244911

is it out yet? I'm really exited about getting one. I've been saving for a D80, but if it's going to be similar in price, then screw it.

My god you guys are misinformed, the D80's 3200 I find is definitely better than 3200iso film, whether it's Kodak or Ilford.

Lowering iso below the optimum does clip highlights but in ultra high contrast scenes, with tests done on my several D300 bodies is that at 200iso, there is still evident noise (pixel peeping of course) and at 100iso, it's largely gone and the DR is moved a stop from highlights.

>>244911D90 has the D300's sensor so it's about as good as APS-C gets noise-wise

No, it's not the same sensor.

>> First and foremost there's a new CMOS sensor, which Nikon claim produces D300 quality output at up to ISO 6400 and - one of several features to 'trickle down' from higher models - the same highly acclaimed 3.0-inch VGA screen as the D3/D300.

What's the base ISO of the D80? 200? So ISO 100 is kinda like pull processing then?

Also, the b/w setting for jpegs on the D80 is not bad. I always shoot RAW+basic small jpeg but I prefer having the jpeg in b/w because I find it easier to review. Pic is a small basic jpeg resized 50% in paint.

I think it is, but I don't own a D80. Yes if it is 200, the base ISO is always the optimum the sensor is designed for. Lower is done through some software mess.

I think it's safe to say it won't be worse than the D300.

Good news about the screen too. More models having the same screen means said screen is cheaper to produce meaning larger profit margins for Nikon and potentially price cuts for us.

It's weird, I just haven't been in a black and white mood since I got the 5D. I'm digging its color so much.

The idea behind modular design is that one part moves ahead in terms of development faster than the rest of the system and it would be cheaper to retain the older parts and swap out the obsolete one. In digital SLR bodies, it isn't much of an issue because the rest of the components are rather cheap and they all age just about the same. SLR systems are already modular in the sense that bodies, lenses and accessories can be switched around.

Digital MF cameras have modular backs because, fuck, those things are expensive.

And rather than have a higher base ISO or high ISO performance, manufacturers should concentrate more on dynamic range. ISO 3200 is high enough already for most applications and I'd like to have the ability to shoot with a shallow DOF even if not all the time.

14-bit vs. 12-bit

The D90 has a base ISO of 200 and 12-bit.

Is this sum long exposure HDR?! Think I should come back again and try and get it with the train next time? It only crossed my mind now.

It has always been uninteresting. Or at the very least extremely easy. Its as easy as taking pictures of flowers or cats. Its just that people find it politically incorrect to sound out that your photography of the "poor and oppressed boohoo" is just mindless snapshots which happens to be located in a slummy part of town. Especially in a place like the Philippines where hobos are a dime a dozen.

Not saying they cant be done right, but due to the sheer massive number of hobos and hobo pictures, you have to do something extremely amazing to pull it off.
