I just got a D40 today. After long talks about how I want to save money for a D80, I decided to just buy the D40 now and learn-learn-learn, and later move to the D80 or something better.

Took this pic tonight waiting for my GF to get out of the house. Tripod = her car and my jacket (that's why it came out a bit blurry). I really wish I thought of using the self timer before I did it.

Minus the thought about non-AFS/I lenses, i'm extremely happy with the results so far and can't wait to play with it more.

Reminds me something about a stupid person pays twice. But seriously, did you have the money to get a D80? It seems a waste in getting a D40 when in the future you'd be getting a D80. And besides, once you learn of certain features you'd be missing out on the D80, you'd hate yourself. But then again, some other people will blabber on about saving money and just get a better lens instead. In any case, look around for someone to unload that D40. You might feel the itch real bad soon.

The stupid person sits on his thumb and saves his money forever to get the best.
I'd rather have a sub-par camera and be able to continue to learn and take pictures, then save constantly for something.
Sure, you can get the Toyota now and drive it, but wouldn't you rather get a Rolls Royce, Bentley, Bugatti, or Lamborghini? You'll only have to save up your money and not drive a car until you're 95!
D40's are fine. I'd rather have a D40 and a good lens then a D80 and a bad lens, and it'll serve you just fine until you can afford a better camera.

Out of curiousity, what lens did you get?

If you're happy with the purchase then fantastic :)

Don't worry too much about naysayers, there's isn't a 'correct' decision. I think you did what you felt was right for you.

Happy Shooting.

It came with the 18-55mm, which is surprisingly sharp.

As far as kicking myself in the ass for the D80, I get to play with it every day at work for free. I've obviously played with both enough to know that the D40 will suit my needs for now, and to be honest, the size and interface make this camera really fun.

And 33888, I hope you don't have a DSLR, because you know the DMillion is coming out in the future right? Should've waited with that logic!

I'm just saying if you have the money for the D80, why not. If you only have the amount enough for a D40 then the purchase is well justified. And yes I do have a D80, and didn't go for the D200. I had the money for a D80 but not enough for a D200 plus a lens. One might point me to D70s plus a couple of excellent lenses, but once I'd have a D80 I'd clamor for one.

So yes, I got a D80, I had the money, and I've saved up enough to pick up an 80-200mm lens in a couple of days. My logic prevailed for me.
