Does /p/ know of any shells for cameras that are "water proof" or designed for underwater use? I really would like to do some underwater shooting when I go on vacation soon.

There are quite a few P&S cameras with underwater shells, and I've heard that the Olympus DSLRs have by far the best selection out of any of the big guys.

Hard enclosures for any SLR are going to cost WAY more than it retailed for.

EWA Marine bags are supposedly great for casual snorkeling, and are not too bad (still quite expensive)

I actually just got back from taking underwater pics on vacation. I took my little underwater film camera. Got some great slides out of it. I wouldn't bother with dSLR's though.

Ziploc bag + Canon PowerShot = underwater housing.

It has to be a genuine Ziploc bag from S. C. Johnson.

You could just buy an underwater film SLR. Nikon made them and you can buy them second hand on eBay quite cheaply now. For less than housing.

You mean a Nikonos? I'd love to get me one of them, but it'd be a last ditch resort really.

That's the one. It's not the most convenient, but good housing is so damned expensive. Underwater strobes aren't cheap either if you're looking at them too.

I've heard horror stories about the soft housings giving up. If I was doing it it'd have to be the tough cases or I would not do it at all.
