So I've got a Canon Rebel xti, and up until now, I've just been fooling around with the 18-55mm lens that came with the kit. I kind of want to be getting some more lenses to work with. I was sort of thinking I could use a telephoto lens, maybe something that could zoom to with 200 or 300mm, but I've seen a lot of people here say they don't use them as much as they thought they would, so maybe I'll hold off on that for a bit. I know I'm going to get a 50mm prime, so other than that, what would you guys say are some useful lens that you wouldn't be able to operate without?

True. If you can't take any good pictures with the 18-55, don't waste your money on a lens that will be harder to take pictures with.

WEll they are more for specific situations, BUT heres my favorite lenses
Sigma 24mm f1.8 (awesome Macro and super sharp, Take pics at night with ease aswell)

Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 (just very usefull all around, also great sharpness and contrast, Best for use indoors)

Sigma 10-20mm (Wide angle is fun, Also the HSM motor is very fast, gotta stop down for good corner to corner sharpness but makes great perspective distortion pics)

I have a 50mm prime. It's excellent. But I don't think I have to tell you that. Personally, I was looking into a wide zoom lens myself and I don't know what I should get. How is the 15-55mm working out for you? A fast prime would also work as well. Any suggestions?

If you want something that's more of an all purpose lens, I would probably recommend the EF 28-105mm. At 28mm, I hear it's a bit soft.

Not OP here, but I have the same camera, here's a shot with the kit lens. I've found it to take good pictures sometimes, but also to take onces where I have trouble getting the colors right and need to do a great deal of after editing(This may be my fault for not really knowing how to set the settings).

This pic (of one of my horse's eyes) was right on though

I don't think you know what you are talking about.
