YOU know i dont get why film has suddenly become really artsy and everything, its no different to how it was 10 years ago and 10 years ago everybody shot with film anyway, its just like, people like like to be different or sumthin u know?

>> Anonymous

Maybe it has the retro kind of appeal.
To me the 'artsy' look gives the picture a more sense of emotion, story, etc. I really don't know- that is just what comes off the top of my head concerning how I feel about film.
>> Anonymous
>>293280
When everyone shot print film, there were people who shot slides just to be different.
Now that everyone uses DSLRs, there are people who shoot film just to be different.
There will be people who shoot old or modified DSLRs just to be different. It's already started, slowly, with D1Hes (MORE FILM-LIKE), and IR modded bodies.

shooting film is like stroking your cock, every time you release the shutter it's like you're on the verge of creaming. but you actually only get to orgasm once it's developed - all 36 frames of multiple orgasm at once.

Delta 3200, and Kodak 3200 aren't their real film speeds. TMZ is really 800, and Delta is 1000 I think (depending on the developer). So there's no "real" 1600 or higher ISO film out there. Everything is a push.

Besides, it's only on 35mm where pushing Tri-X 320 to 1600 or "pulling" TMZ to 1600(still a one stop push) is a big deal, because the film is so small.

Here is an example of Neopan 400 pushed to 12800 ISO. Neg is not cleaned because I didn't care.

This was stand developed, just for the hell of it.

What about Fuji Superia 1600? Is it possible to have C41 that's pushed by default?
>> Anonymous
>>294362

I'm pretty sure that for color films like 800z, and Superia 1600, it's the actual speed, though I've heard that Portra 800 pushed is better?

If you were interested in finding out, you'd have to look at some c41 developing kits to see what they say.

In any case, for 35mm, the grain on high speed color films is intolerable, and digital is probably a better choice. 800Z and Portra 800 pushed one stop is awesome.

That's because film is retro and cool and grain makes it instantly obvious it's film, and therefore retro and cool. And authentic, because everyone knows the old days were more real and especially in dark rooms and on overcast days more dramatic.

Not like inauthentic digitalfags with their "clean files" that show the scene with no visible interference.

Another film shot, this one Ilford Pan F+, developed in Formulary WD2D+, shot with a Mamiya 645 Pro and 80mmf /1.9 wide open.

I shoot both digital and film, and honestly I just see them as tools. They're just different is all. Digital is fantastic and I wouldn't want to be without it, but the same can be said for film. I used film for a fucking decade before I started shooting digital, too, so as much as I love digital there's also the simple fact that I understand film and all its idiosyncrasies very deeply, and that alone is immensely valuable. It's valuable because I know what it's going to do, I don't have to worry about it, and that understanding lets me concentrate on the image I'm trying to make.

There are tons of reasons out there to shoot film, but that's part of why I do it.

>> Warren !!JL+uuUHRNlZ

I reduced development to compensate for the overexposure and give a normal contrast range. I used a more dilute developer to get the time back into a workable range, as the time would have been too short (~3 min) otherwise.

It went wrong, but I'm strangely captivated by the result. The film is roughened up a bit, because it was testing only, and I didn't care to handle it properly. But I think it adds to the overall.

In my experience these films seem to generate a lot of "Ektachrome sucks, pros use Velvia" and "XP2 isn't real B&W, pros use Tri-X" comments, which is unfortunate. I guess it's the same sort of thing that goes on in other gear-related flamewars though, something that can't really be helped. Plenty of good stuff is shot on Velvia, it just isn't for me.
