Hey /p/

I'm a total beginner when it comes to photography, but i love taking pictures. For my birthday, my parents are giving me a gift.. either a Nikon D90, or a Canon 40d... with a choice of lens.

Now, I don't have any clue which is better, or what lens I should get... So, any suggestions? d90 or 40d, and what lens?

Thanks!

Get the D90 the technology is just another generation ahead of the 40D.

OP here, Thanks for the info!
Price is sort of an option, my parents don't really want to spend more than $1500 for the body AND the lens... I thinking of the D80 instead of the D90, just to be able to have more money for lens..

Down the line, I think I'd really want better/more expensive lens, so I'm probably gonna get the Nikon, instead of going cheap and having to buy more and more stuff.

I'll check out the review..
Thanks once again

Also, the D80 isnt really that much worse than the D90, right? I'm not gonna be using the hidef video, so i think the D80 might be a better choice... any thoughts?

Longpost anon here again.

My thoughts are, the guy that commented on the updated technology has a good point.

Imo what you should do is get the D90 kit, learn for a couple months on the 18-105mm lens that comes with.

In December (hopefully you can save like $100 between now and then?) Get the recently announced Nikon 50mm f/1.4g Price is around 440.

Or! Get a tripod now + the 50mm f/1.8D. That lens is manual focus, I believe the D90 has an internal focusing motor, so no problemo for you.

TLDR: Get the D90 kit NOW, with a 50mm F/1.8D (100 bucks, great in low light), and a good tripod. (manfrotto is nice, they have a good one around 180 bucks)

That adds up to about 1450-ish depending on retailer. Then you're set for sometime, and that will give you a good feel for what you want/need next.

This is a good idea.

Get a lens between 28 and 35mm, a 50mm, and that's a good start. Save up for something a touch longer and a touch wider. Unless you're shooting studio or landscapes as your only thing or close to it, tripod can wait a while, too.

So yeah this is /p/ and everyone says buy a entry level dslr and 50mm prime. Why? Because its good glass for cheap? Sounds fair enough.

The problem is its pretty much a useless lens. Ok its reasonable for portraits.. but still not as great as something longer like 80mm or 100mm. Its pretty good for live music i suppose.

Otherwise its pretty dumb. Its an akward focal length to walk around with. On street you are limited to having a single subject or moving so far away the subject moves into the background.

I think the only reason why people recommend a cheap 50mm as a first lens is so that kids with their new dslr want some noticeable bokeh to show how proffessional they are. Well fuck that.

Luckily i got out of this cheaply by purchasing an old ricoh 50mm for 20 bucks. Now i'd like to pass this on to everyone in buying first lens town, save your money for a lens with a normal to wide field of view if you want a walk around lens or a longer lens for portraits. Leave the 50mm for people who want minimum depth of field per dollar for wank factors. Crop sensors have killed the nifty fifty lets move on.

Isn't the 50mm on a D90 75mm equiv?

why is anon obsessed with walking around with a lens and never actually taking pictures?

Better to get a pedometer

17-50mm Tamron 2.8, that is the lens you need. Otherwise just grab the 55-200 VR for more reach

I would suggest getting to some shop and playing around with both. Personally I can`t stand Nikon ergonomic (they make good cameras but not for me) while Canon is ok (still not using any of those two)

About 40D if you think about it, wait like 1 month price should drop due to 50D. I can already get it here for like 1100$ and that leaves 400$ for lens.
