hey /p/. i know you get this all the time and you're probably sick to death about it, but i need your opinion. recently i've been saving up to buy a Dlsr and now that i have enough i came upon a dilemma. see i had originally planned on going with the nikon d40x, since it seems to be so well loved around here and i was hoping that it would be a good first 'real' camera. however, as i was doing comparision shopping i stumbled upon the olympus evolt e 510 and i guess i was taken in by it's features. so what i wanted to know was whether i was caught in the haze of "ooo buttons and toys" or weather i should just go ahead and shell out the extra bux and enjoy myself.

tl;dr should i get a nikon d40x or an olympus evolt e 510. or should i just lurk more beacuse i'll cum buckloads no matter what.

Given that you know this, did it occur to you to check one of the many, many other threads on basically this exact topic?

Go with the D40. The 4/3 system that the Olympus uses is still immature and unproven, with not-enough-lenses and no upgrade path to larger sensor sizes possible ever.

I semi-disagree.

1. It's not "unproven." It works and produces good images; there's no new technology to be "proven," just a different sensor size.

2. I'd say it just got mature with the new Olympus cameras. Previous four-thirds cameras largely sucked, but I've heard nothing but good about the new ones.

3. Upgrade path doesn't really matter. 90% of Canon DSLR users, even artistic/hobbyist ones, are never going to buy a 5D or 1Ds.

Oh, and there's no "upgrade path" from 35mm to MF for any film camera. Same situation here.

4. The advice to the OP should be the same advice /p/ dishes out to everyone looking for an entry DSLR: go with the one that feels best in your particular hands. Go hold and look through the viewfinder of a Pentax, Canon Olympus, Nikon, hell, even a Sony and a Panasonic, and buy what feels best.

Well, the "not enough lenses" thing applies to the D40(x) series too... since it only accepts Nikon AF-S or Sigma HSM (unless you feel like manual focus). There's actually a decent selection of lenses for the E-510... but the prices are a bit too high than I would pay for them...

Even Panasonic, which is an ergonomic nightmare IMO, has its share of people who think it feels the best in their hands.

Olympus needs to pull its head out of its ass and make more decent mid- and low-end stuff. No one cares about $2000 pro lenses when there's no pro camera in the system.
What's the fucking deal with their 7-14, for example? It costs more than the similar Canon EF-S 10-22 *PLUS* a Rebel XT body.

And if you DO feel like manual focus, putting MF Nikon glass on an Olympus is actually a better idea than putting it on any two-digit Nikon.
