whats wrong with the 18-135
ive got a 55-200 and a 50/1.8 already
>> Anonymous
If you already have a 55-200mm then why buy an 18-135mm? Unless you plan on selling it, your money would be better put towards a 17-55mm f/2.8. The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 is remarkably sharp too.

What this dude said. Buy the D80 as body only and put the money saved into other junk. Like an 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 VR if you don't have that much or what>>299521said if you've got enough.

i think ill probably try selling my 18-55 and 55-200 and then using the money id get on a kit lens to get the 18-200
>> Lynx !!KY+lVSl0s2m
Just get to body, not the kit. Upgrade to sb-800. Go shooting.

Ok, no. The point is not to have ONE lens that covers all ranges. The bigger the zoom range for the lens, the less quality it is going to have. (L glass typically being the exception).
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>299651

if IQ is the absolute priority then get the 2.8 zooms or fixed focals.

otherwise shooting stopped down with the 18-200 will suffice

i usually shoot in raw and do some pp anyways. the 18-200 just seems more convenient
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>299722
okay, go with convenience.

Easy.

scratch that, read the review at dpreview. aand now back to square one.
>>299533
considering this right now. i wanted a sort of all purpose lens that would cover more focal ranges but that seems to be a waste of money from what ive seen in reviews

and another shooter realises that 18-200s arent what they hoped.

the 17-55 2.8s are amazing. but expensive lens.. the 17-50tamron being good also and much cheaper.. then hold onto the kit 55-200 until you have the cashflow to upgrade it to a 70-200 or something..

canon 17-85 makes me rage

sounds like nikon 18-200 is nikons version of that lens

If your sb600 does not come with a diffuse, get one.

fixed

>L glass typically being the exception

L glass is not an exception. L-class superzooms like the 35-350L may beat consumer glass, but are still inferior to L-class lenses with less range.

you know what you want so I would suggest a couple things you may wish you had after you start shooting.

tripod
remote shutter release
extra camera battery
2 sets of rechargeable batterys for the flash
a good CPL filter

>tripod
set.
>remote shutter release
thanks, forgot this.
>a good CPL filter
ive only just started looking into this, and i vaguely remember a thread about walmart cpls but didnt read it. so, where should i get this?
>17-50 tamron
this lens looks pretty solid so far.

D80, remote shutter release, sb-600, uv filter, CPL, 17-50 tamron, batteries

seems pretty good, unless someone can talk me out of the 17-50 tamron

>>where should i get this

dont get a cheap offbrand one from walmart. Go with B+W, Tiffen, Hoya, or Heliopan

a cpl will help reduce glare on glass, water etc... It's the best filter to have on hand.

The tamron 17-50 is very nice and sharp for being a 3rd party lens and not too expensive.

>>300004
yeah ive been looking at some photos shot on flickr to get a sense of the lens. looks pretty sharp to me

last order of business is to find where to buy a d80 body only for a decent price.

lens would be good
