Sup /p/ fancy adding too/correct an faq for this board?

With the amount of 'iz the d40 good lol' threads these days it saddens me that there are less and less photographs posted here.

horrible idea

i made a 800x4096 pixels tall image once about a beginner's faq, if you were quick enough you saw it posted, but i deleted it after 10 seconds. still have the file

Your suggested FAQ has a strong Nikon bias.

i like how Nikon people, i won't say Nikonfags, can justify suggesting a used, discontinued camera from 2005 or a much more expensive model to people without batting an eye and think it's totally cool and normal

Planned improvements: less Nikonfaggotry (e.g. no separate question for the D40), "threads we don't want to see" list (e.g. your cat, "film/digital > film digital,") etc.), and a more reasonable "how do I improve" answer emphasizing studying great visual art, photographic and not, and pointing people to places like David Alan Harvey's blog.

Let's come up with a separate image full of terms the ubernoobs need to learn like aperture, focal length, etc cause it's always easier to look at than pointing them to wikipedia.

Another image for "wut dslr to get", we list down all available bodies and plot them along a chart by price categorized by brand. For P&S's, it's always Canon A-series/SD-series/Panasonic Lumix anyway.

I'll start compiling diy manuals.

Why rewrite bibles? Just tell people to get:
Techniques of Photographic Lighting
Kodak Guide to 35mm Photography

>> Anonymous
>>2828541 x external light meter*

worst advice ever given on /p/ by a tripfag
>> Anonymous
>>282879
This is true.

However, the D40 is also a bad camera design. So is every other entry-level DSLR except the Pentax *ist models and maybe the 450D, but the D40/40x/60 is the worst of the lot because it combines all of their faults with the lack of the one feature that mitigates the most glaring of them.

Just because someone who's good *can* make a good picture with a D40 doesn't mean that's what they should be using, or that they couldn't sometimes make a better picture otherwise.

>>282883
It's fine if you don't like external meters, but suggesting one isn't bad advice.

For exposing digital raw files, test shot histograms are the best way to meter light, but if someone likes working with a hand meter, that's perfectly all right.

>> Anonymous
>>283081
If it was on anything other than a D40, yes.
>> Anonymous
>>283064
That point is pretty much irrelevant as there are no good viewfinders in modern DSLR's
Even if you go fullframe they are shitty by yesterdays standards, the 5D has what I would call a decent viewfinder, not a good one.
Even though compared to most cropsensor DSLR's with their crapfilled keyhole viewfinders it's fuckin amazing.

If you are bitching about this then there really just two options for you.
Buy the most expensive fullframe DSRL you can find and live with the fact that even though the viewfinder isn't superb it still isn't bad.
Or you can go back to old manual focus SLRs and fuck around with film, developing and scanning.
You'll get a great viewfinder (if you're carefull picking out the camera) at a low low cost but with all the obvious disadvantages of film.

As that creepy fucking voice which every single CS and CS:S server uses, IT'S TIME TO CHOOSE
(I guess you already chose something like one step up in the product line and think your marginally better camera is O so fantastic and completely superior)

Also, for about a year I was happily using a camera which I bought for about forty bucks, and that included two lenses. But yeah, go ahead and call me a gearfag. (yes that camera had a viewfinder better than that shitty DSLR I bet you are using. And yes, I still use it for taking pictures)

>>283103
>>all the obvious disadvantages of film
I can really only think of two-
No instant feedback and no machine gunning

The difference in cost is negligible, the difference in visual quality is debatable but mostly negligible for real-world.
>> Anonymous
Instant feedback doesn't really bother me and machinegunning is for fags who don't put any thought in to the pictures (most of the time, of course it can be useful at times)

The problem I see is the supply of film, developer and in the case of E6; labs. If you're poor the cost can be a problem too, but you save so much on the gear.
Really good cameras and lenses can be had for peanuts and you don't have to worry about protecting your gear in the same way, I almost always have a camera over my shoulder when I leave the house (as long as I'm not planning on getting shitfaced, though drunken shooting can be fun), don't think I would do that with a expensive, huge and heavy D3 or something like that.

To be honest I mostly wrote that "obvious disadvantages" to avoid a shitstorm of "BAAAW FILMFAG IS BUTTHURT, MY REBEL KICKS YOU'RE(sic) ASS" and then just get ignored.
>> Geoff !HHZjY4djcE
>>283153
is no machine gunning really a disadvantage, It can make you pay more attention to the scene and try to make an actually good shot and to not waste film
>> Anonymous
Cheap digital SLRs are the best for learning on, I feel. As long as someone is putting in serious effort to learn and not just mindlessly machine gunning with the green box mode and hoping that will do the trick. The combination of instant feedback and the digital tools allows for people to learn at a rate and in ways they couldn't before.
