Hay /p/. I took my digital camera out last Sunday & went out with a coworker to take her photos again. How horribly did i do?

Not so horrible, Though I'm curious as to if she liked them?
>>107535has an unnatural looking pose, that I don't find that flattering.

Other than that, good job on keeping the highlights on skin tones, And it doesn't look like you had to bump up the shadows either.
I assume you were using the 18-135?
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
From here and your flickr, I prefer these 107537 style shots over these 107531 ones, the poses are more natural and the colors are better.
I agree with Vincent, the pose in this tree shot is a bit awkward. The color tree shot in your flickr is even more natural, but that tree really makes an awesome background.

>>107535
would be better without the girl in it.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>107544

we're arguing over that right now. She liked some really, really shitty shots that I refuse to give her.

>>107546
Which one? I don't remember. I think i posted the same one on the flickr, didn't I?

And of course it isn't natural, that tree was hard to climb on :D

Well I guess it is the same pose, but I think the shadows/framing and angle work better with it.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>107553

Nah, her eyes are closed in the post I put in up there. It does look better with her eyes open :)

On this shoot we were really fighting a ton of stuff- she got her hair cut with these cute bangs, but the bangs were too long and shadoweded out her eyes. She brought puffy EVERYTHING! Dresses, jackets, nothing form fitting so she either looked pregnant or larger than she really is. Ugh.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>107557
That might be part of why the architecture shots work so well, fits the background more. The outfit in the tree pictures would be nice with the spanish architecture.

man the harpoons

although she does look kinda good.. i'm so confused ;_;

>she got her hair cut with these cute bangs, but the bangs were too long and shadoweded out her eyes
Recommend getting a reflector. They're pretty cheap. I've got this circular twisty-fold-up reflector which is really cool because it pops to full size as soon as I pull it out of the little pouch. If nothing else, that's enough to get a smile out of most people, especially little kids.

>She brought puffy EVERYTHING!
Yeah, I was noticing that. Convince her to wear something slinky next time.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>107560

She isn't that large, it's the damn dresses she choose.

>>107561
after looking through the shots, i actually yelled at her for bringing puffy dresses and told her to buy something more form fitting.

I do have a reflector, but because of the positioning of the sun it didn't do me any good at all, but I tried.

Vincent- yes, 35-135. I love that lens ;)

careful when you pose a girl with her legs open if she has a dress on, unless you subtley did this for 4chan in which case carry on

and for some reason it looks like these photos aren't that sharp... maybe you shouldn't stop down so much, open up to f11 or f16 and get a lil higher shutter speeds and less diffraction?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>107577

Heh, she insisited on doing that in that pose. I actually thought of 4chan for a moment, took an upskirt shot & a close up of the neckline on her dress, but decided not to post them & deleted. Overall, i'm not happy with the shots OR my digital camera that took them, but it's a start. Thanks for all the feedback, i'll be keeping everything in mind for the next shoot
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>107581
These do look like they could use a little higher contrast. Not so much the tree shots, but in general. Including the stuff with Athena.
>> Anonymous
>>107581

i could have fapped
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>107583

higher contrast? I tried, but it looked too funny to me and didn't feel right. I actually wish I would've shot film.

The Athena stuff was my first trip out with the camera and it was on auto the whole time. Thank goodness it wasn't paid, either ;) There's an interesting discussion goign on on my flickr on one of her shots, if you want to go and take a peek. Still learning & trying to figure things out.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>107592
Did you try it with in-camera settings, or all in post? With jpeg, I find getting the settings as close as possible makes the shot react better in post, since you don't have as much information to work with as raw. And by higher, I just mean a real little bit, it would make it pop a more. Admittedly the hard lighting in these current shots makes the colors harder to manage, and the skin tones do look good.
>> Anonymous
>>107583
i don't think it needs more contrast, it needs more fill cause the lighting is pretty harsh

>>107592
woulda come out better on film since film has more dynamic range, but at the same time lemme hold your flickr address?

>>107597
and please don't tell me you shot in jpeg T.t
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>107597

If i up the contrast, it makes the columns or background so bright it washes her out, then she looks funny. I have to fix them all in post process- what came out of the camera even though my settings were fine looked like shit. She unfortuantely can't shoot in the evening, only in the morning and she always comes late, which makes the light even worse than what I wanted. Oh well :)

increased saturation and highlights. 2min in picasa.

it does bring out the glow of her skin and detail on the dress.

Okay, now she looks orange. Like she had a bad accident with a bottle of fake tanning gunk.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>107611

that's the problem I kept running into. She looks too orange there- i'd like to keep her skin a normal color. In fact, i fixed a lot of them and added in more cyan because she looked too red & it was bothering me. Everything around her is way too bright and distracting, though.

Those reflectors are really cool...until you try folding them back up again for the first time and in front of someone else. The bigger it gets the worse it is. :P
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>107599
Yeah, it doesn't seem to need any more changes to the colors, and don't increase the bright end of the range, that's already bright enough, just drop the mid-dark end of the curves a little.
You're right though, light like this makes it a lot harder.
I'll give it a try when I get home.

Do you have a flash that will work on your d80?

Strobist has this article about how to change the color temperature of your flash by placing a gel swash in the diffuse hood for the SB-600/800. You can get these swatches of gels for free at any production supplies place. That might help next time you can use a reflector.

A word of caution for anyone trying to get gels by requesting samples: They are on to the scam and now often ignore requests for them.

Here's my attempt. I also tried those first two in this thread, but that lighting is just too hard.
Incidentally, it looks like you're letting the camera pick the iso. Set that thing to 100 and you should be on more familiar ground.
