Is there a particular brand of filter that /p/ recommends? Or are they all about the same?

B+W Filters

(these three are really the largest and most common)

Now obviously each company makes great stuff and some shit, but in GENERAL, hoya tends to make low-quality stuff (stay away from the "Green series" Philippines filters), tiffen makes good quality / pro-quality stuff and B+W makes top quality stuff.

I prefer hoya personally. I have filters from all three and for the price, hoya does a great job. I've actually found the threading on hoya's HMC filters to be the most precise of the three. Tiffen's filters come in nicer cases nowadays, they're good overall. B+W filters are usually too expensive, I only have a 58mm polarizer of theirs and it's good.

Now if you want to get into cokin, that's a whole other story...
