widest-angle, largest aperture lens for Nikon? Anonymous
What is the widest-angle, lowest aperture lens out there for a Nikon dslr? (cropped?)

Pictured is the 30mm f1.4, I currently have the 50mm 1.4, but I need even more wide than 30, preferably with the widest aperture possible.

Nikon 28mm f/1.4

Sigma makes a 20mm f1.8, 24mm f1.8 and 28mm f1.8
They are the most affordable.

I own the 24mm f1.8, Fantastic lens, however it flares pretty badly.

There's also a 24mm f/2 Nikkor. Great lens as well.

hmm alright thanks!
When it comes to a ratio of widest angle to largest aperture, which do you think would be best for model photography? I get close and hold an umbrella with a flash in one hand (which is ridiculosly tiring, but the only way I can vary lighting situations on the fly without having to readjust the stupid heavy lightstand every 3 seconds. )
yes I know that wide angles are unflattering, but the locations are important to the theme/mood of the photo, and if my main source of light is the umbrella, i want a wider aperture so it can capture more of the surroundings. (yes, though I could still just increase the ISO as well, I prefer without grain)

Now I'm just considering the 12-24 f4 by tokina - while it isn't especially wide aperture wise, the focal length seems low enough that it might work. margh.

You could also adjust the shutter speed, down much slower than you probably think.

24 will be wide on crop, but tell us how far you're standing or want to stand, exactly. It probably won't be wide enough; you probably do need the 20 or something like a 12-24. But tell us more.

It'd be tough to handhold at slow speeds one handed like OP is doing.

You don't use flash much, do you? (I'm not being snarky, I'm asking, it's an impression I've gotten from past posts of yours.)

The flash freezes a subject in its crazy-fast flash, because it gets so much more like. Insanely slow times can still look sharp because of that, while the slow shutter lets the background exposure, unaffected by the flash, burn in.

I shoot a Nikon D80 and a 18-70 stopped to 4.8 with the flash shutter sync speed at 1/60th of a second. True I could reduce the shutter speed, but I don't think it will make much of a difference where the secondary light is from the moon.
In a photo such as this, I would like to see more of the bg so the location is more visible.
Due to the nature and legality of where I shoot, I have to be ready to fly at a moments notice and don't want to use overpowering flash in the dark for the sake of drawing too much attention. If I use a wider aperture, I can get more ambient.
Sorry for the watermark, it's automatically inserted in my workflow for FB. also I've had my photos stolen.
I'm not sure how people here feel about flickr either, I think I'll upload the photos there as well for higher resolution and more examples.

Where do you shoot?

Yeah, that's one part of photography I have quite a bit of interest and no experience in.

Though wouldn't the background get blurred? If you slow down the shutter speed, enough backgrond light is collected to show a clear background, but then hand shake would show as well.

Here is another photo from the same shoot where I'd like to see more. The photos in larger size are on my flickr which is www.flickr.com/flamingsnowman11

I will shoot all over the place, I can tell you more if you send me a pm on flickr.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I appreciate the support, but after using my d200 and the 80-200 f2.8, 50mm 1.4, 90mm f2.8, and 10.5 fisheye, I find the 18-70 to be the most practical and efficient on my d80 for these type of shoots. I will look into purchasing the 12-24 seriously, but honestly don't have the money nor the will to sacrifice one of my other lenses.

You'd think that, but it doesn't for some reason. I'm not sure why.

Try it out, in shutter priority mode with the flash on auto since you won't have a hang of flash exposure yet. I'd post examples or links to some, but (long story) my computer's on the fritz and I'm in a weird gimped browser right now so it's not playing out. I'll see if I can get something to work.

>it doesn't

Well, not to the same degree. It's not a technique that gets perfection in anything, but it's still very effective.

nikon 10mm f2.8

very nice lens

Will do once I get my off camera cord working. Seems like the shoe part of it has a loose contact or something - that's the second bit of badly soldered cheap lighting gear I've bought.

how wide do you want to go?

6mm f/2.8

It works with a shoe-mounted flash, too. It doesn't have to be off camera.
