Which would be give the best value as a starting camera? I don't own any lenses and have nothing invested in either Canon or Nikon except perhaps for a Canon Speedlite manual flash from the 70's.

I'm leaning towards Nikon because I heard it's easier to acquire lenses for them. And if I do end up with Nikon, would it be better to take the D80 and a 50mm 1.8 (which after lurking this board enough seems to be highly regarded as godly) or to get a D40 and more lenses then upgrade the body later?

Either one would be a fine camera. Whichever control layout you like better.

The thing is, since I'm not used to any control layout, I can easily adapt to either.

I'm also starting to think the D40 is a bad idea because of lack of AF support.
>> I own a D40
The D40 is a great camera but if you are going to buy lenses then get the D80 because the D40 won't auto-focus with older lenses.

If you can afford the D80, get the D80.

Okay, decided to go with Nikon but here's another dilemma. D60 or D80.

D80 has autofocus on AF lenses and I heard that the D60 can only autofocus on AF-S and AF-I lenses just like the D40/x but then again, the D60 has the new EXPEED sensor present in the D3 and D300.

D80

doesn't matter

the d80 is still a prosumer level camera

the d60 is a toy

Get the D80. D60 = Glorified D40x

D80's a POS, D60 if anything, unless you have an old AF lens (AF-D).

EXPEED's a processor, not a sensor, the D300 and D3 don't even use sensors that are the same size

Will Rebel XT/XTi prices go down significantly once the Xsi hits the market?

What is so "POS" in D80?

Probably some guy with a D40 with an inferiority complex.

Pentamirror vs. pentaprism
.8 vs .94 magnification
1 vs 2 command dials
no 50/1.8 vs. 50/1.8

It might take a little time, but that's the trend so far.

I loved my D80 until I got a 300.

The only thing I didn't love was the SD cards.

And my battery just died after a year and a half of near constant use. Go fig.
