Hey /p/, its another equipment recommendation thread!

Im looking for a reasonably quick macro lens (f2.8 or below), but i'm not sure what focal length i should get.

Ive got an EOS 400d, and Canon's 50mm, 60mm (pictured) and 100mm lenses are all within my price range.
Im intending to shoot mainly nature shots with this lens, with the possibility of some formal portrait work in the future.

What would you recommend?

Have you thought of going with high quality manual focus lens?

You can pick them up cheap on eBay and the adapters are not expensive either.

yeah with macro, AF can be pretty useless since the result you want needs to be carefully selected.

The longer the focal length the more space you give yourself work in.

I havent seen any manual focus macros on ebay for EF or EF-S, but this lens (the OP pic) has a manual select, as does the 100mm and the 50mm.

I dont really see the advantage of going full manual, given the AF on the 400d is really good, and switching to manual is always an option if i need it.

Right now im leaning towards the 100mm Canon macro, for the flexibility.

i was at a camera store the other day and they had the 100mm macro lens i believe the f stop was 2.8 i think it was 99$, and i think 100mm would prob be your best bet.

$99 are you kidding me?

The Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens retails for over $400.

Please tell us where this magical store is.

If it's online, standby to get ripped off. If it's not, is it used? If not that, then /r/ location of store that's losing money.

nope wasn't online was in the shop holding it and testing it on my camera with the price tag right on it. however now that i think about it, i may have been mistaken on the focal length, it may have been the 50mm, now i feel bad ><. ill go tomorrow again and check to make sure on that and ill let you know.
