How about a thread for good examples of HDR
>> Anonymous
yeah
thats a good idea
we should do that sometime
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
The water in that is quite nice, or it would have been if it wasn't surrounded by Disneyland. It's a shame to see them spoiled like that. Not a bad idea by the OP. It's rare to see many good examples of HDR without the cartoon look or obvious halos.
>> Anonymous
how do you make HDR images?
>> Anonymous
>>94981

this is ridiculously cartoony.

this is a TERRIBLE EXAMPLE OF GOOD HDR.

Yeah, and while we're at it, we should have a thread about good examples of dog shit.

No.
>> Anonymous
>>94988

I had presumed the OP was planning to prompt us into posting ones that would contrast with it as truly good examples.
>> Anonymous
>>94993

you presumed too much.
>> Anonymous
>>94994

Possibly. It wouldn't be a bad thing to see some real HDR done well.
>> Anonymous
>>94999
Real HDR done well looks like a regular fucking photo. That's why you don't ever see it stand out as HDR. This haloey, bloomy bullshit that you see everywhere on the internet these days is all a huge example of how to do HDR fucking wrong.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>95006

Very true. The only way to show how it was done is for someone to post the images that were composited and then the final result. The over-the-top HDR is very popular on dA and other sites now, it seems.

I remember seeing a very good magazine article on it a while back.
>> Anonymous
>>95008

Of course sometimes someone who's used to a particular lighting condition might get suspicious of an image with an apparently amazing dynamic range, such as shots of a sunset.
>> Anonymous
>>95009
True. But that can easily be done with simple compositing.

This is 3 exposures at -0.7, 0, +0.7

I should probably start trying at earlier in the day.

A friend of mine composed a shot of 11 different stops... which fucki brilliant for HDR, but apparently there was too much wind so he just made a composite of it... i'll see if i can find it.

Gimmicky and over-processed.
>> Anonymous
>>95017
ya theres very few in there that I think the HDR actually improved the image without distracting from the subject with oversaturated pretty colors, and Massive Fine contrast adjustments.

i have a d40 which doesnt have exposure bracketing so its fuck difficult to HDR.

also, cocks.
>> Anonymous
>>95509
wow, thats a shitty thing to not have in a camera...

have you tired changing the shutter speed?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>95509

yeah just change the shutter speed in accordance to what stops you want... i usually do that if i want more that 2 stops or more than 3 exposures.

Obviously doesn't work for scenes where there's alot of movement.
>> Anonymous
>>95510
Very few cameras have bracketing that's suitable for HDR (i.e. more than 3 frames, more than 1 EV spread). Why is this so difficult to implement is beyond me.

Yet another reason to push for free/open source camera firmware

Imagine how awesome /p/ would be with what people could do with modifiable firmware.

OR if they want to protect IP/viruses just allow scriptable control.

I'm getting hard just thinking of this
>> Anonymous
>>95610
Get a canon powershot. There's modified open source firmware for them. There's an easy script language in it that will allow you to program whatever the heck you want.

Also, Canon has released SDKs for their cameras. I don't know exactly how much functionality you can extract from them, but you probably need to have your camera attached via USB in order to take pictures with the SDK.

too bad you started with a bad example.... why is the sky so dark if everyhing else is so dark? hmmm explain that one to me

I've always enjoyed HDR shots of cities, particularly on overcast days.

Something about HDR and overcast cities manages to bring out every dreary detail and make even the nicest-looking cities look like veritable dystopias wrought of brutally crisp glass and painfully weathered concrete.
