I plan on going on a trip to various countries over the next few years and am in the market for a new camcorder. The newer samsung that's coming out is what I -really- want only because I'm a Samsung fan-boy but looking at the price of the comparable Pannasonic that is out the samsung device is out of my range (It'll be samsung priced).

Being that I'm not a serious video maker and I'll only be sharing these images/videos amongs friends I can't really justify spending 900USD+ on a HD camcorder.

Any way, after a bit of searching around I came accross this fellow: http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vModelDetail?surfModel=VDR-D230&catalogId=13
401&cachePartner=7000000000000005702&modelNo=VDR-D230&itemId=110042&catGroupId=25002
&surfCategory=Digital+Camcorders&cacheProgram=11002&storeId=15001&displayTab=O
I like it because it has USB as well as DVD so that I can pop into my laptop on the go. I've found "grab and go" (local retail) prices as well as legitimate prices ranging from 210USD up to 500USD (new and used). I'll be picking up a spare battery and extra DVD's as well.

Don't get anything with a disc.
HDD is the way to go.

Avoid samsung gadgets, they work for a year or two, after that something fails.

Dont listen to that guy, DVD recorders are great.

Good thing about dvd is that you always have your things recorder, and the computer Hard disk fail and you're dead.

Don't listen to them, get a MiniDV!

HD camcorder -> replace HD if dies
DVD camcorder -> must finalize disc before viewing on computer; could potentially waste disc space and money.
miniDV -> older, like a digital vhs tape, pretty good quality and reuseable to a certain degree, but less and less manufacturers make them.

OP here,

I read that if I use DVD-RAM then I won't need to worry about finalizing, Is this true? If so will I be able to drag and drop to my computer if I use DVD-RAM? I'm not at all worried about immediate playback on a standard entertainment system DVD player my computer(s) have DVD-RAM drives.

I've also heard that the video editing tools that come with this device (and most others) aren't worth a damn. Does any one know of any software, for any of the Unicies, that'll do video editing?

Although I didn't really like MiniDV originally because or space issues. I'll look a bit more into MiniDV systems.
