The ones that are used professionally are usually pretty easy to spot because they will be banged up, scratched, missing LCD covers and the like, written on, engraved, and generally look heavily used.
Most pros don't get rid of their cameras just because a new one came out, they use them until they fall apart then throw them away and buy another one. When I was working as a photojournalist we were still using a few F4s bodies even when we were starting to transition to digital just because they still worked.
The reason former top of the line bodies are so cheap is because the people who buy them (rich amateurs) are the very worst of gear snobs and they can afford to ditch whatever they have the second something new is released. The market gets flooded with used high end cameras and nobody rich wants them, so it's only natural that the prices take a nose dive. Since the sellers have pockets full of money already, they don't care if they get anything for their old camera so they just unload them for whatever anyone will pay.
