/p/, I'm having a problem. Sometimes when I take pictures with my Digital Rebel Xt, part of the flash doesn't illuminate, or something. I posted an example of the problem. When I try to lighten the damage area in photoshop it becomes this ugly green color that I don't know how to fix. What causes this problem, how can I avoid it, and how can I retouch my photos if it does happen? Thanks.

My first guess is that your hand or something else is getting in the way of the flash when it fires. Keep track of where your fingers, hands, and forearms are and see if the problem goes away.

Especially since it's a vertical format photo, you were probably holding onto the lens with your left hand and blocked the lower part of the flash.

Sounds about right.

Some lens hoods and other attachments partially block the flash at wide angles, as well.

does the camera have a lens hood? i've had that same issue with my D80
>> cantarella
Nope, no lens hood. I was pretty sure my fingers weren't in the way, but I'll try holding the camera differently next time...

Thanks. :)

This is somewhat confusing as the flash is some distance from the body making it a challenge to block. I experimented a bit and found the only way to do it as in the OP's photo was to have my left hand gripping the body and lens but with my hand around the flash recess which is somewhat uncomfortable. If it was only around the lens then it only blocked the edge. Perhaps with a large diameter lens and a hand it is possible.

Out of curiosity, what happens if you take a shot of the wall in a dim room with the flash on, does it fill the frame?

had a similar problem with my ae-1, my flash was out of synch.. try forcing the next lower shutter speed

I doubt it's flash sync because the shadow edge isn't a straight line. Also I'm not certain about this camera, but most newer cameras won't let you set a shutter speed higher than the camera's max sync speed with the flash attached/popped-up
