The only losses are the swiveling viewfinder, the use of AA batteries, and I personally have a slight preference for how the S3IS handles manual adjustment of aperture and shutter speed to how the FZ-8 handles it.
But yes, the S5IS is fail. I believe it is larger and I know it is ass ugly, as well as the problems you mentioned.
The S4 was skipped for the same reason the G4 was: in Japanese, the word for "four" and the word for "death" sound very similar. There is a superstition against the number four for this reason, and out of marketing considerations, and probably in no small part superstition on the part of Canon decision makers as well, Canon never names any of its cameras by the number four.
He might not need a superzoom, however. So we need to find out what he needs.
