So, I've been considering selling my Bessa R and replacing it with a fixed lens RF.

I bought it as my first RF, and I love shooting with it, but it seems kind of extravagent to own a $250 interchangable lens camera if I only use one (Jupiter 8) lens on it.
Keep it:
-Build quality: It's solid, no problems, and will last.
-Good, modern meter: No worries about type of battery, good results.
-Huge VF, and contrasty, clear RF patch: I won't get anything this nice on a fixed lens.
-Upgradability: If I want to buy another lens, I can.
-Buying old Fixed lens cameras means either taking a chance on a cheap camera that might not work/need a CLA, or ponying up for a confirmed working camera, which can easily get up to $100.

Sell:
-Especially with my current lens, it doesn't produce photos technically superior to a decent Fixed lens RF.
-Size: A fixed lens is smaller and lighter, more pocketable.
-Noise: It's relatively quiet, but any fixed lens RF has a near silent leaf shutter.
-Expense: The money saved could buy a decent amount of film.

My primary argument against selling would be the rangefinder patch. There is no old fixed lens RF out there that has an RF patch anywhere near as good as the Voigtlander Bessa's, and that's a pretty important aspect of a rangefinder camera.

Why not just get a cheap fixed lens RF and see what you think of it before you decide to sell the Bessa?

Money, mostly. The only fixed lens I've used was a Minolta Hi-Matic E. It was alright, but the rf patch was so shitty, and the meter was crap.

Also: Getting a Full manual fixed lens is pretty difficult.

don't bother, if you buy a fixed lens you'll probably have to pay 100 bucks anyway only to find the self timer stops working 3 months later, the advance lock ceases to work and eventually the meter or shutter clags out. full manual varients are rare. at least hang on to the bessa until you find a great deal in a local pawn shot.

Hope you guys dont mind me asking, what's an rangefinder patch?

You could also look for a better lens, you know?

It's the little yellow thing in the center of the viewfinder that you focus with.

Well, yeah, but beyond the Russian selection things get pricey. Especially for a 35 (No russians to be had).

correct. really bad idea to downgrade your RF camera. I had the canon RF with 42/1.7 in my hands yesterday, it's fairly expensive for what it is. Rangefinder isn't that nice, and shutter button isn't nice either. it's fairly heavy as well, but more compact and with A-mode alright.

find some better glass. the price of older Russian glass is getting pumped up as well, but it's still worth it. consider buying a Jupiter-3, it's a very special lens. keep it away from flare, and you'll get very sharp and vivid photos.

Keep the Bessa. You already own it and you're probably not starving so you'll just regret it if you sell this.

The Russian Jupiter 12 may mount on your Bessa. It's a 35/2.8. Also you could save up for a Canon or a Leica 35/3.5 Summaron/Elmar.

Unfortunately the J-12's rear element hit's the Bessa's shutter curtain AND blocks the meter.

Ideally for the price/performance I'm thinking of getting a Canon 35/1.8, but I'm gonna have to save up. Then again, I've been thinking of getting a TLR, so it's one or the other...

Seconding this guy.

What's a good/cheap rangefinder I can get, even if it doesn't allow lens changes?

Also, I'm asking for a name, not where can I buy it.

Yashica Electro 35 G/GS

I got mine for $24, and that's already a high price for it.

digifag here,
any film recommendations?
I'm looking at Velvia 50, Velvia 100F and Provia 400X so far..
also after a B&W film.
>> Haddock !!xREx2m9lgBs
>>190769
Depends on what you're looking to shoot.
>> ken-t !wQS5KmrMzU
>>190779
Mostly day time street of people with 45mm lens
and I was looking at Provia 400X for night time street.

but the B&W will be for day time street.
any advice on choosing?
any brands better than others?
I don't mind grain that much, but I want a B&W that really brings out textures of materials and makes people look nice

Neopan400. Cheap, good for daytime, contrasty (if you're into that).
