Way to blow out the sky. You should have shot with a medium format camera using Fuji Velvia film to get those wild colors that nature can give you sometimes.

What I said, seriously flashes are god send for this sort of thing. HDR is acceptable when done well. Not for the op shot for other shots ND gradient filters, polarizers, and decent photoshop skills can render a sky correctly as well. For the last option, expose to get some detail in both areas and then make 2 adjustment layers, one for the ground one for the sky. Adjust each to what you want and then mask out what you didn't want adjusted.

Not what is pictured, but it's basically what a ND gradient filter does. It's not really very much photoshop at all, took under 5 minutes. Also it's not a shame if it strengthens the composition, I do it all the time. Most of the files over in:>>182748have some sort of selective darkening.

Because of the complexity of the sky-line, and lack of close foreground subject HDR would be best here.

Seriously though, just shop it. Set your camera to faithful image capture and try to capture the most detail and then later shop how you want it. Focus on getting the most information to work with rather than getting the image right, bracketing is still a good idea though.

Most SLR's have settings you can customize while shooting in manual. A lot of people like making their own custom settings for sake of speed, especially wedding photographers like using these, like one for low-chapel, one for an outdoor wedding reception on a sunny day, indoor reception, etc. What I'm saying is if you're willing to devote more time on each image you shoot, set your camera to faithful or neutral and start from there. As long as you shooting in raw all it really is doing is giving photoshop settings to have at open for the file.
