I recently got a Nikon D40 and am trying to learn how to not suck at taking photos. Been lurking for a while on /p/ too.

Anyhow, I took this today. Some C&C please, and something a little more constructive than "lolshitsux" would be greatly appreciated.

lol shit sux. It's not bad had there been colors other than gray. seriously. The lack of tones makes the photo boring as shit. Subject lighting is flat and doesn't really give contrast to detail.

No shit? And here I was thinking I was the next fucking Picasso. I'm learning how to use a camera, not making art. Go the fuck back to your hipster coffee shop.

Go study the terms exposure, aperture (f/number), shutter speed, sensitivity, and focal length.

And even if you know all the technicals and science behind taking photographs, your photos will still suck without knowing proper composition, lighting and visual aesthetics.

Bawwww....

Just because I'm trying to learn to the technical aspects of photography doesn't mean I'm not interested in making photos artistically. It just means I'm not trying to do that right now. Get that through your tiny artfag head.

I'm the biggest technical gearfag here and even I'd like you to get away from /p/ and kill yourself.

Some serious advice: Photographic technique and artistic expression are inexorably linked. There is no such thing as a "correct" exposure or a "correct" use of lighting because they all depend on the effect you're attempting, which depends on the artistic point you're making with the shot.

Nobody can tell you "omg that's underexposed" if your intention was to silhouette your subject, and nobody can say "noob crop tighter on the person" if you wanted to convey isolation. Of course your exposure choices may not be ideal for the effect you're going for, which is where C&C comes in, but we can't give you an objective correct way to take pictures.

D40's flash is next to useless in the first place. show us your colour version.

the photo is very cramped tho and i dont think its the best angle to show the statue?
