Hi /p/, I'm about to buy a Canon Xsi (or 450d if you're outside the states) pretty soon, and I'm not sure whether to go with the 18-55 kit, or just buy the body and a 50mm f/1.8 lens.

I'm just progressing to slr from point and shoots and I have no specific type of shots that I'll be taking - really just running around shooting anything that comes my way.

Seeing as the 50mm is pretty cheap the cost difference between that and the kit is no big deal.

Which do you think I should get?

yeah, it's a meme but 80mm equivalent _really_ is awkward to work with as your only lens

and people _really_ say get a 50mm just because it's $100 and because it's the cheapest fast lens

18-55 kit first. Good lens for outside daylight shots. Learn the basics and get the cheap 50/1.8 for nighttime photog. Inexpensive and great for live music. Basics, learn more, move up.

Just get the kit lens for now. You'll move up later, but your kit lens will be useful for quite a while until you find your 'style'

but agreed with anon above, get a d40.

Get the kit lens, work with it for a bit and get accustomed to what sort of focal lenses you like using the most, borrow some glass from a friend of yours if you have one.

THEN upgrade to a new lens when you got a clear picture for yourself of what it really is you want from a lens.

seriously what the fuck? the D40 doesn't have an autofocus pin and is useless with Nikkor primes. Way to recommend this to a potential prime buyer

i agree with you, go for the canon... however, there is finally a nifty that works on the D40

Mow some lawns and get both lenses lazy ass.

Start with the kit lens. That is all.

I got that camera and the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. I'm very pleased with the setup. The kit lens is shit.

I'm a happy amateur btw. Not wannabeprofag like the rest of the shit photographers on here.

why would you pay that much for a lens that's not that much different from the kit lens

Not much different? lol lol lol lol!

The kit lens is much better than the old kit lens, which worked just fine if you're just starting to figure out what kind of photos you shoot (and in turn the lenses you need). Go for it.

I think the 50mm 1.8 is good fun, even if it is a bit cumbersome sometimes

50mm being your ONLY lens will be VERY limiting. At an equivalent to 80mm, it is just far too long to be a good all-purpose lens.

Start with the kit lens and go from there.

What exactly does anon mean by the term "walk around lens"
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>262222
Basically, the lens you put on your camera when you don't want to have to swap lenses at all.

Do they make a Canon adapter for the Nikkor 18-200?
>> Anonymous
>>262244

Yes, but Canon also makes an 18-200, so...

Can I walk into a store today and buy it?

In other words, why wait for a Xsi w/18-200 when you can buy a D40 w/18-200 right fucking now that can be used in 95% of all professional situations.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

>that can be used in 95% of all professional situations.

That combo sucks for indoor/low light situations. That takes a big chunk out of that 95% number.

Also, incidentally, Sigma's got an 18-200 for Canon mount you can buy right now.

Speedlites. If you can't mix speedlites and ambient while making it look like you didn't, you fail.

You know, even though the OP hasn't stated what his actual budget is, its hard to recommend an alternative to the kit. As fun as a "cheap 50" is, I'd say stick with the kit lens and see if you even want to go from there. Learn the basics of the camera itself, and actually have a little flexibility in your zoom, so you can even just see what 18mm looks like vs. 50mm.

Nice lenses are nice, but first you're going to have to learn a slightly different system for taking photos.

P.S. i think your next step should be Sigma lens and a speedlite (but then you'll be dropping an extra $500 just for that).
