Hello /p/.
I was just wondering if you could help me solve a little problem of mine - I have found two Nikkor 55-200mm lenses,

and

Which one should I go for? taking into consideration that the VR uses more battery and the other "can" be slow to focus; AF and MF I tend to use equally though so not so much a point. They're both around £5 the same price so it's fine either way, but I just wanted /p/'s opinion.

Picture Unrelated.

Thanks.

Based on a very superficial glance, get the VR one. It's so useful, especially on a fairly slow and long lens like that.

But the final deciding factor ought to be the way the len's results look: how sharp it is, how it transitions to the out-of-focus areas, the bokeh, and so on, all sifted through your aesthetic taste and what sort of work you're going to be doing with it.

They're the same lens, just one has VR. Get VR.

They're not exactly the same. The non-VR has 9 rounded diaphragm blades vs only 7 rounded blades in the VR version. The non-VR has 13 elements in 9 groups, while the VR has 15 elements in 11 groups. The VR is slightly longer and heavier (almost 3 ounces more), which I would say is better, but still doesn't weigh anything. With that said, the 2 lenses perform pretty much alike as far as IQ when VR is taken out of the equation.

I had a 75-240mm which is heavier than the 55-200mm VR (by 2 ounces), but still felt like a toy. It made my F100 with battery grip feel like a featherweight.
