Strobist Anonymous
So what is the opinion of /p/ regarding the whole strobist thing?
>> Anonymous
They probably hate it since it introduces more people to photography concepts.

Its pretty cool. If only I had the money to buy remote triggers and flashes.

On one hand, it's good that people are learning new techniques.

On the other hand, it's created an army of lighting snobs who do nothing with that technique but copy that guy's style and try to copy Dave Hill and bitch at people who don't like using flash.

$10 remote triggers and $20 flashes aren't really what i would call a very expensive endeavor.

So, uh, where can i find flashes and triggers that cheap. What triggers should i look for and as for the flashes, will just about any working old flash do the job? I assume you have to use them in manual mode anyway.

Help me decide /p/.

I think its time for me to buy a flash. Currently I have two options. First is the Sigma 530 Super for TTL use. Or I can go the strobist route and buy two manual Vivitar 285HVs, two wireless triggers, two lightstands and two umbrellas. I think I would have more fun with the Vivitars but then I would have no TTL flash for times when I need to shoot at night and have no time to setup stands. I really hate the pop-up flash on my 400d, I find it to be limited in power and the lack of IR AF focus assist is irritating.

Very specific, intricate lighting and (a guess) boosted blacks, contrast on the raw file, a heaping pile of the clarity slider, pulling back on saturation a little and up on vibrance a lot, followed by some curves stuff and probably local adjustments: dodging, burning, contrast, saturation, etc.

Having the aesthetic taste and visual education of a twelve year old contemporary American and being a talentless, showy, baroque hack who knows his way around strobes and Photoshop also helps. It's really all that's needed, in fact.

ok wait, so /p/ hates pskaught now? GOOD!

Pskaught has talent and great composition, as well as a sensitive social, satirical spirit.

Dave Hill just tries to make things look "kewl." His work has no more artistic or social value than an advertisement; in fact, much of his stuff is just rank publicity photos, designed to sell more whatever.
