boring light mediocre composition bland color rather soft, it is almost as if you don't have even the most meager of photo editing programs.

Also it would take less than a minute to remove all the skin blemishes in photoshop.

You're relying on only her hair to make to make the photo. Nothing is interacting with the hair and there is nothing invoking emotion or interest the photo to the average viewer.

Also when taking a photo look at the model (assuming) before hand to find what angles complement her features. This one has pronounced front teeth which are even more pronounced by the angle of the photo.

It also looks like you pumped the saturation too much, or had your camera set to do so. The lack of shadow detail and well placed highlight detail is also damaging. You are also lacking a decent composition or a composition that interacts with the subject.

Expanding more on this photo, consider the placement of natural light when photographing out doors, and what quality of lens you are using. You have heavily blown out the background by choosing to shoot with the sun to her back instead of to her side or back or by choosing not shoot in the shade. Choose the location of your light before and consider bringing reflectors if shooting in overhead light to remove some of the downward shadows. No one looks good in strong overhead light, though the major problem of eye shadow is being avoided by the sunglasses. In regard to lens quality understand that you will get terrible CA when shooting like you have around the edges of her hair, even with L grade lenses this can happen, just not so much. In this case with some patience you can shop it out if you want.

Also, hello Declan Roache.

blocked blacks, remove skin blemishes, brighten the eyes in photoshop with either the spot tool or layer masking. Layer masking is advised because you can turn it on and off and is more flexible.

Composition wise the lines at the angle they are is distracting and doesn't interact with the subject. The lines should lead to interest or interact with the subject. For example if the shape they formed matched or contrasted something in his clothing or hat it would add to the photo.

Best so far, maybe bring down mid tones in levels? You'd lose more shadow detail but not much you do do there. Would've have benefited from a greater dof so that that left side would be infocus as well. The rim of the hood interacts well with her eyelashes and contrasted by the non-textured space that separates them from the eyelashes. Photoshop out the piercing, it's distracting and adds nothing. Her expression is vacant and detracts from the photo. I don't have a remedy for this : / People portraits are not something I shoot if I can help it. Though could increase the contrast in the eyes for some help to them.

This is the exposure lecture.

Your subject is portraits, instead of trying to build from scratch, look at others people work and build from there. I'm not saying to copy them, but to study them. Why is this portrait invoking or interesting is what you need to ask yourself whenever you look at a photo. Do not respond: "because the eyes are cool." Respond: "The skin and background textures interact in color and texture that pop the eyes and invite the inspection of both that is further complimented by the position of the figure. The texture is created excellently by the position of the light which further creates eye movement by creating interesting highlights in the cane, eyes, and hair." What part of this do like? What part do you like? What would you do differently if taking a portrait of this person? Is there a different effect you like that would like to bring into this portrait?

Pick several websites, artists both on the web and in book, and browse them everyday, asking yourself these questions and you WILL get better.

Slightly tilted, but I like it. Would've complimented an interesting foreground most excellently, but alas nature does not always provide.
