hello thar, buying my first DSLR (pentax k100d) soon but have a question

Is it okay to not own a zoom lens? Instead of buying the kit 18-55mm lens, i was going to get the pentax 35mm f/2 instead.

photozone highly recommends it, I wouldn't ever need to replace it (unlike the stock lens):

And since the 35mm equivalent is 52.5mm, this is a pretty good normal lens. Unfortunately it's $300, and Im curious if anyone here would strongly discourage owning just this one lens, at least for a while.

wannabe art fags will say LOL get one prime to learn ART OF PHOTOGRAPHY

but you will be severely limited with only one lens, specially if it's fixed focal

get it now if you really want to and then decide if you want a zoom after

you'll probably want both the kit and the prime. If i was going to get one first, i'd get the kit. It'll let you get pictures you wouldn't be able to get with the prime.

Get a *pentax branded* m42 adaptor.
It's getting warm, tis the season! Troll pawns, fleas, boot sales for cheap M42 and K-mount lenses.

OP here, i was thinking another alternative to the kit lens would be

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC

or Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC SLD ELD Macro
http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-18-50mm-Aspherical-Samsung-Digital/dp/B000JDKFXK

what is the difference between the macro and non-macro versions? Is the macro edition really worth the extra $110

It's okay to not own a zoom lens, but there's a lot of awesome to be had at wide and telephoto angles. Might want to consider it even if you plan to use the 35/2 as your main lens.
