The Canon EOS 300D is a good place to start on the Canon side (although I'd recommend a 20/30D if you're taking it semi-seriously and a 5D if you want the cheaper of Canon's two full-frame digitals).

Personally, I'd go for the 20 or 30.

I know nothing about the Nikon alternatives.

Hey I forgot to mention, EOS 1Ds Mk3 if you have more money than sense (good for pros, not for ams).
