5D or not to 5D Anonymous
Hi /p/, Im in the market for a new camera and want to go full frame. Im interested in low noise levels and current lenses arn't an issue.

Do I go for an end of line 5D with 24-105 for c. $2000 or splash out the $3500 for a 5DMkII with lens?

Basically has anyone done any comparisons between the 5D and the MkII yet to show if its worth the $1500 in IQ (particularly in low light)?

I have the same dilemma. Any information would be appreciated.

If you have $3500 that you're willing to spend on camera equipment, i'm sure you know what you're going to do with it.

Isn't being spoiled and rich a good enough reason anymore?

I thought I was verging on the new MkII and all the bells and whistles but you have just made me think about the lovely lenses I could get for the $1500 difference.

Am i going to be regretting this in november when all the reviews come out raving about the great ISO performance on the mk2?

Are you really going to be shooting in conditions that require 26400 ISO or whatever the mk2 can belt out?
>> Anonymous
no but I was assuming that a sensor that handles greater ISO would perfom with less noise at lower ISOs?

I don't use Canon myself, so I couldnt tell you.
Although I do know that if I was given the option, i'd get the 5D + spend $1.5k on a decent lens etc

If current lenses aren't an issue, then get the 5dmk2.

What lenses do you have, though?

Its a little early for reviews yet, at least any of substance. Personally, I think the 5D mkii is going to be awesome and its a serious step from the current 5D. If you're just looking for a better image, yeah, maybe a lens will do it for you, but the mkii is improved in every area (plus now HD video). Personally, I'd pick up the camera and work with the lenses you already have if you're satisfied with them.

Where are you getting the 5D + 24-105 for $2000? Amazon is listing it as closer to $3000.

The 5D Episode 2 is going to be, at the very most, a two stop difference in ISO performance because of the increased pixel density. If you shoot low light or action and need the extra sensitivity, get the Part 2.

If not, it's a much tougher decision with little things like vignetting correction and a HD video shit that separate the two, in which case you should just buy the Mach One and a lens you've been wanting or a couple flashes unless you find something extremely compelling in the spec list.

It's worth getting the 5DMkII for the Creative Auto mode alone.

To bad it didn't come with a Auto Talent Mode.

You can also make a statement with a questioning tone which is not shown over the internet. I'd imagine the only other way (in b4 blatantly saying it) to show this would be with a question mark.

I put a ? at the end because I was hoping for clarification.

Two stops could be the difference between having to fit a prime or run with the zoom, I'm looking for a lightweight rig to take round the world with me.

I was under the impression that a decrease in pixel density was better for reducing quantizing noise.

I hate the noise that I get in the shadows on the 40D. I don't have access to my storage from here for a sample but heres a good example of what Im talking about:

http://www.dpreview.com/gallery/photo.aspx?gallery=canoneos40d_samples2&photo=23
admittedly this is at 1600iso and could be sorted in post but I want to avoid as much of that as possible. Perhaps the Digic4 would make a better job on in camera noise reduction?

My limited exposure to the 5D has convinced me of the need for large aperture primes to keep the noise levels down but I am keen to see if the mk2 is able to deliver similar performance from the kit zoom?

Why don't you just look at all the sample images floating around the web? There aren't any direct comparison, but I find it hard to believe there aren't enough images for you to decide. That's the best way to figure out if the 5D Episode 2 will have the noise levels you like, rather than coming to us with a vague question of what you should get with no explanation of what you're looking for.
