Two opposite opinions.. x_X
About DSLR, I thought cheapest are from 800-900 bucks.. And I'm not sure if I really need it yet.

What about its rivals, Fuji FinePix S6500 and Canon Powershot S3 IS?

No, he could get a D40 for below $600. D40s are pretty good for beginners.

oanasonic lumix fz50 is better than any sony

The Sony H5 has way lower noise than Panasonic FZ-30 or FZ-50. On H5 ISO 400 is totally usable, whereas on FZ-50 the high ISO image quality is so and so... But the Panasonics have better manual controls than H5. Kinda depends on what you want from a camera.

I have the H5 and I love it. Of course, I have to be honest and tell you that I am looking for another camera (but that's only because I want to get more 'serious', if you will, with photography), but the H5 is perfectly fine for beginners.

The only difference between H2 and H5 is 'megapixels'?

i considered the H5 along with the canon S3 IS, went with the canon, and am very happy. they're clones -- sony made the H2 to compete with canon's S2 and the H5 to compete with canon's S3. i generally hear that the canon's better. i love it anyway. i tested out the sony at the store too and i don't like its features as much.
