Here's tip:
don't post flower or pet pics on /p/

Flower shots may be pretty, but they don't require any composition or thought to look good.

Post people since they are fun to look at even if the composition is bad. Then we can comment on them better.

OP here, Ill try getting some people shots. This shot was really me just around taking photos. I thought this one was the best I got.

>>233447

a good start in terms of composition - work on your exposure a little bit IMO, it could look a lot better if it was slightly darker; make the colors pop more. Right now it's a bit too bright/neon (unless that's what you're going for) and reel down the contrast just a bit.

>>233449

OP, exposure? what exactly do you mean >.>. The other things I get though and ill work on.

Exposure, in terms of how bright or dark you make a photo. WHen something is too dark and you can barely see it, it's underexposed. When something's too bright, kinda like what you did in your OP post, it's overexposed.

I have no idea how to work the camera you have, so, um.. does it allow you to change fstops at all when you are setting your settings ?

>>233463

Ah I understand.
My cameras pretty old and I dont see anything related to 'fstops'

Also, what would be a decent camera to start off with? Like I said mines kind of old so ive been planning to get one. Something with a decent ammount of settings but not to expensive.

Well, i started off and learned on film, then went digital, but it might be best for you to start in digital then move from there. My first digital (that i'm still using) is a Nikon D80, i like it a lot and it gives me room to play around. I have a friend who has a d40, and he likes his a lot too. Did you have a film or digital preference? If you want to go with film, i'd suggest finding a used Nikon N60 - it was my first upgrade from my original Canon A-1 and it worked really well.

I prefer digital. I was thinking of getting something like this:

amp;langid=EN

i dont really have alot of money and this seems to be a nice camera. Ill check out the d40 and d80 though.

Most local stores should have layaway/payment plans. If you need, i can always recommend you to mine! It took me 4 months to pay off my new f100.

And the Olympus is a good camera, but you're still going to be limited on what you can learn with it since you can't change lenses, etc. What exactly did you want to try and shoot?
>> Anonymous
>>233469

What kind of a effect would different lenses have? As for what im going to shoot.. im not really sure, most likely wide varieties of shots (scenery, photos with friends, etc).
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>233470

Hmm, i can show you. Is it okay if i post some photos in your thread as an example just to show?

of course, thanks for your help

Okay, cool. Forgive the odd filenames, since i pulled them from my flickr.

This shot was taken with my 35-135. It wasnt something I would've have been able to capture with my wide angle, because they were too far away to be able to use it and I wouldn't have been able to frame them this neatly if i had tried.

This one was taken with my wide angle- and this case it saved my butt. There were so many balloons around that if i only had my zoom, i would've had to walk a lot further back to make sure everything was in the shot. In this case, even though i was closer to the balloons and i would've liked, my wide angle lens was.. well. wide enough to where none of the balloons on the sides got cut off. A wide angle will do you better for things like landscapes, all around nature shots, large groups of people, etc.

I did forget to mention that a zoom lens, like my 35-135, also makes a good portrait lens for people, models and so on :)

This is actually the spoke of a wheel on an old machine- it's only half an inch wide. but it looks a whole lot bigger. you know why? Because-yay- Macro lens! My favorite type for pretty much anything! They let you get as close as your hearts content to flowers, animals (try not to scare them off, butterflies, etc), crabs, plants, leaves, grass, anything you'd like. You can get within half an inch and STILL be able to focus. Most other lenses wouldn't let you get any closer than 4-5 inches away from your subject. When you want extreme close up and extreme detail (usually not the best idea to use this for people), macro lenses are the best way to go.

There's other lenses, like fisheyes, zooms and superzooms, but you really only need those basic three, if at all, honestly. It up to you on what you want to shoot- if you want to learn more and shoot more, nab a dslr that fits different lenses so you can aquire new ones as you learn and grow. As long as you stay within the same brand name equipment, your lenses can move with you from camera to camera and it's a big advantage.

oh i see lenses have different sort of 'effects'. That seems intresting, but I dont really want to be carrying around several kinds of lenses. Especially when im in places like school <.<

of course not, you leave them at home. Carrying them around school=setting yourself up for disaster. But they're good to have if you're going around on the weekends, etc too. Try to get lenses from your parents, christmas, birthdays, etc. Thats how i got mine :D

The cool part about dslr's is that you can buy a kit, and it comes sometimes with 1 or 2 lenses that you can learn on, before you invest in more lenses or better equipment, so it works.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>233491

lol i figured you'd pop in! I still like it horizontal :)

OP- you know what's best for you, and where you want to go/what you want to learn with. Follow along with that! But depending on how serious of a hobby you want to turn photography into, don't rule out the idea of getting a dslr either :)

>>233493

I think ill go with the olympus or something similar, build up skills then switch to a DSLR. Thanks for all the help!

Liska, Im not OP or anything, but quality posts, thanks for taking the time!

Cool pictures too..

Cool. Let us know where you end up! (though>>233446is right.. be prepared if you're taking pictures of flowers/pets and posting them in here, because some /p/ers are very sensitive about it. Make sure it's a unique one if you do take it!)

>>233497
Thanks- and no problem. Glad you found them semi-useful too

stick with the camera you have or switch to dslr. dont waste money on getting another camera if you just going to use it for a while then buy something new. you can learn basic art concepts like composition, color, and what not with the camera you have, but if you want a new camera ID suggest jumping into the WIDE WORLD OF DSLRS!
>> Anonymous
>>233501

OP here, well im still not 100% sureon my decision so i might do the jump.

Also any other C&C people have is still welcome =D

That's all good advice so far.
A d40 or d60 kit with 18-55 and 55-200 gives you a lot of versatility to play with. Until you need a lens with a more specialized purpose, or a real quality upgrade, those two lenses would serve you well, and a camera and two lenses is a pretty minimal kit. I have those, plus a macro lens, which I always carry, and it isn't really any less convenient, since it's the same bag. Like the other guy said, either stick with what you have, or get a dslr.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>233504
And the point was not to recommend a specific camera so much as to say that a camera and two lenses can go a really long way, you don't need to carry around a huge kit.
>> Anonymous
>>233575
you probably should have mentioned the fact that oly has a two lens kit and cannon probably does as well as sony then....

We normally only know the cameras that we work with and have experience with :) I know i do the same thing with my d80- it's my one and only digital camera. I've seen elfman with his d40 and the resulting shots, so I know that one's a good starter too. The rest are beyond me-but i'm sure the OP will do his homework into everything because he chooses to buy a camera

Yeah, I don't know anything about their product lines. He seems capable of doing his research though.
