what does /p/ think of photographing strangers?

do you just point and click without doubts, hoping not to draw any attention or do you find yourself to ask the person for the shot?

teach me your ways.

I always thought I should ask, but I'm to shy and also I don't like if people are 'posing' when I take pictures so now I just point and click too. Most people don't really notice unless I get up close..

What do you use to recover them?

And I'm too shy to ask people for permission.
I either take it and walk briskly away, or just don't.
Last night I had to take some, and I went right up to a window where people were eating and took their photo.
Took me a while to focus using a rangefinder because it was so dark, and they saw me from the start, so it was very awkward. But rewarding all the same.

It's been a long time since I've done street. Any I just slap on a telephoto and stick to the 100-200 range when shooting. People will notice you with a large lens, but you can get people without them posing. If need be I talk to the person, but this is rare. What comes down to is you just need to shoot with confidence. In the least looking confident and not shy or unsure will serve you better in your interactions with people when you shoot them on the street.

dont care what people think
the only time i wont take a picture of someone is if i think they're gonna get really pissy with me, or if i cant immediately continue on my merry way
i dont ask permission most the time, hell people dont notice most the time, but i do ask permission if it's a kid because parents get mad easy.
also kind of avoid the temptation to use a long tele... makes you look like a creep, it's hard to find, and the perspective makes everything look impersonal.

tl;dr
dont care. just preset your focus and exposure, take the shot, and walk away
