"Cheapest" describes it quite effectively. The problem comes when he or she throws in the competing adjective "best".

wow, um try walmart

Honestly OP? Save your money a little more and get a decent starter camera. If you get one of those shitty bargain bin cameras and expect to get artsy with it, you're going to end up hating photography.

There is no ":3-chan" fucking retard.

Its a damn expression.

What exactly do you mean by, "expand your horizons"?

Just get a digital camera and find out everything it does and how its best to use it (like iso or something)

Fool around with it, take landscape photos, animal photos, portrait photos, etc. See what you like best.

Move on from there, and you do what you want

get an XTI I think or a D40. Just save one paycheck for your camera, that is if you can save one paycheck. Try to get a camera where you can manually adjust as much settings as you can. You can't always go for auto settings all the time. A good photo can be anything, from nice lighting effects to, perfect clear non grainy shots. Try to buy at least one photo magazine to get a the idea of what a good picture is. If you can't afford to buy a magazine, go to your local library. That will cost you ZIP. Hopes that helps a bit :3

100$ is very little if you want to get into the hobby of photography.
I don't know how much they cost used, and can't be bothered to check for you, but take a look at either "Canon G3" or "Nikon 5xxx" used. Those models are some years old now, but should still be in working condition. I have a Nikon 5700 that I gave about 1000$ for new, took about 15,000 pictures with it, completely abused it and it still works great. (well ok, had to be cleaned for sand once, and sensor was changed once - burned some contacts on it). It probably costs around 100$ used these days.
Forget about SLR cameras - its just not for you.

Or there's the option of film. The startup costs for film are way lower--you can get an old mechanical SLR and a couple of good lenses for well under $50 if you look long enough.

However, if you're at all serious about photography, the costs of film and processing will eat through your $100 budget right quick...

I'm tempted to suggest the Nikon Coolpix 950. It's an very old camera (1999). Hear me out though. you should be able to find it between 50-100 dollars. You'll also have to get a small compact flash card/reader. It has a lot of cool options though and it's fun to shoot with. You can shoot in JPEG or uncompressed TIFF. You can manually select aperture and shutter speed (though not both at the same time, i think).

It's also threaded for filters and is able to pick up a lot of IR in, giving you the option to try some cool stuff.

Take a look at it at dpreview.com and ebay. It's old but it was quality back in the day, and is still better than any point&shoot you'll find at walmart for the same price.

> i usually just do sketches and paintings

Carry on then. Save your money until you can afford something worthwhile. In the meantime, work on your compositions by continuing your sketching and painting.
