polarizer with/without comparison Anonymous
i'm trying to show my friend that you can't replicate a polarizer using photoshop

this picture isn't the best example because, really, it would be pretty easy to fix it in photoshop

does anyone have any shot of like, water or something like that where it's really clear cut there's no way photoshop could do shit

While the effect on the sky is great indeed note the sea. The real power of a polarizer is its ability to reduce reflections. This includes reflections on leaves and other foliage and not just water and glass. This creates a greener green landscapes that people so often seek.

bleh

i've been looking long and hard on photo.net, dpr and other forums for before/after shots but haven't found yet that really shows

i want to be able to smack him on his face and say DO THIS IN PHOTOSHOP BITCH

with the shot you posted, he'll just say, oh nothing some contrast/brightness can't fix

someone posted a really good one once, with a swamp filled with flowers, the shot was just ugly as shit without the CPL
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
yeah i keep meaning to buy a new CPL... but me needs 150 dollars for a B&W... meeeeeeh

Send him the one on the right.

>>137254

i guess that will shut him up for now

he'll probably say something stupid like, close the blinds or move to another angle

the shot i remember was perfect

no CPL: blue reflection of sky on the swamp, grass, that's it, run of the mill picture

with CPL: you can see all the yellow lillies floating on the water along with the grass, was a great shot

I might go hiking tomorrow. If I do I'll force myself to peel my Cpolarizer off so create compare images for you.

What do people recommend for CPLs? I don't want a cheap (read: shit) one.

I'm actually not sure how to set up a double picture like that in gimp, but do you mean these two?

I'd personally recommend the B+W or Nikon's own CPL II which is only about 3mm thin.

If you have more than one lense, buy a 77mm CPL and get step down rings to match others. Much better than to have one pro grade filter than a bunch of average ones.

yeah that's it!

Open one photo, go to Image -> Canvas Size, click the chain links so the aspect ratio isn't locked.

Double one of them (smallest one is better) and resize.

Paste second picture in, or open it as a layer. Move it next to the first one then merge down.

Resize if the full comparison is too big.

Hm. Cool.

There's a dust spot on those pictures. O.O

Also- When would you not use a polarizing filter for outdoor photography? Seems like it would be a good thing to always carry.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
>>137342
When using an infrared, ND, or graduated filter? Stacking too many filters can degrade the image.

Or when you really just need that 1 stop of light.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>137342
It was dust on the sensor at the time. Yes. It has since been cleaned.
If I'm outside and it's sunny, I usually have one on. But I don't have other filters either. The "before" shot is actually with the filter on the lens, just at minimal effect. It's also pretty pointless if it's overcast.

What's the difference between a Circular PL and a Circular WIDE BAND PL?
