Do most /p/eople take their camera and just get lucky with photos? Or do y'all go out looking for photos, saying "Today, I need 5 photos!"
Like, on your lunch break or after school or work, do you just run around for an hour trying to find THE SHOT to take? Or do you happen around, and see something and go "OH SHIT, I NEED TO SHOOT THAT!" Or both?
I hardly go anywhere, I See the same damned things over and over, and its boring, and unphotogenic. :\

I usually take my camera on specific outings, I don't often find my best shots by just carrying my camera. However some of them happen that way, if lighting is really good, I usually know a few places where I can go to try shots. Or just randomly drive around looking for cool stuff.

Then again I take a lot of landscapes. If you were big into Macro's or portraits or street photography, then its a bit different.

You sound like you are just learning, your not going to be as skilled at seeing what will make a good picture right away. Practice helps

I research locations by looking at topographical maps and then imaging searching the general area on various photo websites to see if the kind of area that I can get the shots I want at. I also tend to read weather reports and place to shoot accordingly.

I've been struggling for inspiration too of late. I usually just drive somewhere, get out and walk around. Try to see the same old scenes through different eyes. I don't like people staring at me when I shoot either, which sucks because all I use of a 4x5 on a tripod or a big arsed Mamiya, so I go to places people don't a lot.

I'm hoping my trip to Nepal this week sparks something mega for me though. I can see me burning through all my film without problem.

I often go out with the specific intent of taking photos, but I also carry my camera with me everywhere, just in case I see something that's particularly interesting or unusual.

For an example, the picture is something I saw while on my way home from work one day. This dork trying to turn a B-double around a corner that simply wasn't wide enough.

As you can see, the dickhead driver not only failed to notice when he hit the light pole, but pushed it so far as to tear out a panel of his tank trailer.

So, my advice is go out regularly with specific intentions in mind of things to photograph, but also be prepared to take photos of anything that might pop up unexpectedly.

yeah, I was going to do the same today b/c I had the whole day free and wanted to do some educated exploring but it was dark and rainy all day ;_;

usually what I do is take a small detour every day coming home from school or during lunch (I have a long lunch), and explore a different area every time... I can usually spend an hour with just one unexplored block and get about 50 pictures and 10 or 15 ones I really like. When I'm at home I try to look for interesting crap I left around. I get a couple happy accidents by just taking a snapshot of whatever I'm looking at. It's a great way to get rid of a creative block.

drive the old highways

The interstates were made to be fast and the highways were made to be scenic. Seriously, some of the old highways are amazing.
