A 50mm lens is the standard lens on a 35mm camera, right?

What is the standard lens for a dslr? Surely it can't be a 50mm because of the sensor crop thing, so what is it?

Or am I just completely wrong?

divide by crop factor and then go back to grade school math, faggot.

The standard lens on a DSLR is a zoom lens roughly equivalent to 28-90mm on a film camera.

>standard lens

Oh Lawd....

If by standard you mean most popular, then for the DSLR, look no further than the stock 18-55's, a safe bet that there are more of them out there than anything.

But it all depends how YOU shoot, id see it like this

Holiday: 18-200 (Covers most situations, dont "need" to change lens, and thus you dont need to carry them about, as a slr is a big sign saying "MUG ME")

Photo Walks: back to your style, some people go for the 18-200, some with a smaller zoom and a longer tele, personaly, i rock a 50mm prime on my body, a mid tele and a super wide in my back pack when i go out with the intention of taking photos

"because i dont want to miss a shot" times: The smart choice would be to say the 18-200 or similar, you dont stand the risk at losing shots due to your lens. But again, for this i rock the 50mm, i just love it, and ive used it to the point of knowing exactly what its going to look like when i bring my viewfinder to my eye (somthing that I cannot do with a zoom, and i take my hat of to anyone who can)

18-55 is most often the standard for kit lenses

The official "normal" focal length on 35mm is 43mm. That's covered by most lenses on crop.

But isn't a 50mm like a ~65mm lens on a dslr? I thought 50mm was the standard for 35mm because it is the focal length which is closest to human vision, but on a dslr that would have to be a 38mm lens or so. So why isn't the standard prime for a dslr a 38mm lens?

get a sigma 30mm f/1.4, now stop posting in this thread

Because no one expects DSLR owners to use a "standard prime" anymore. It has been replaced with a "standard zoom".

Olympus 25mm pancake is the only prime lens out there intended as "standard".

Don't listen to Honest faggot, he's a giant idiot.

Take the focal length for 35mm, and divide it by 1.6, 1.5 or 1.7 depending on your camera and that is the focal length you would need to recreate something equivalent to 35mm's field of view.

So yes, a "standard" 50mm on 35mm would be around 33mm for a 1.5x dSLR.

It's not a "standard" because people want zooms because it's more convenient.

This from a guy who claimed you would get better results outside on a sunny day than on an overcast one.

I thought I told you're retarded ass to stop posting here. God you're a faggot of the highest order.

1.6x crop: 31.3 mm

'Standard' does not mean 'usual' in photography, it means the lens that approximates the FoV of the human eye, which is something like 43 degrees.

pssst, don't mind Honest, he's "dyslexic" and he's a mongol so he doesn't understand what "standard" means

oh lawd, explain in detail what he said so i can lulz

I was talking about DSLRs. Rangefinders can't use zoom lenses by design (at least so far).

Not sure if you remember that thread where the guy was showing off his photograph of his white car. The one where he used that expensive mount to get the shot just off the car while driving...

Anyway, Honest... blasted the shot for having "bad lighting" on an overcast day and said he should try again on a sunny day.

God what a failure.

oh lawd, the white Mazda RX-8? the one where the guy posted 2 different shots, one with the boom one with it edited out?

yeah, i think i remember him saying that shit

honest is one of the worst tripfags in recent times. he's at the same level as the 2-3 other tripfags who think they know what they're talking about and actually go in threads to give advice when they have no clue themselves

like martin, burt, else, that other guy, what's his name, Project. actually no, Project is kind of cool sometimes. who else, i can't remember right now
