I have enough saved to buy a new nikon d300 at the end of the month. Is it really worth it?

yes. im sad i wont be getting one when they release
>> Anonymous
Signs point to yes.
>> Anonymous
yes.

but you already know that. you just wanted to brag.
>> kaoru
no, bragging wasn't part of this. Ive always wanted to get a near professional camera. I bought a Sony DSC-T1 years ago. I took some pretty good pictures playing around with it's manual settings. It's really good for close up takes. But now I need an upgrade. I was thinking of getting a d200 but i heard this was coming out so i'm waiting. i just want to know is it worth it. or can i get the same camera with a lower price tag and different brand, possible canon?

yes. its the best camera for the price when it comes out. have fun getting one though, they are backordered for a while right now.
>> kaoru
i made a friend at a local camera shop not a ritz store. and he ordered one for me just as long as i pay the final retail price, he said it will be around 1900$. so no problem there.

full frame or GTFO

you could always buy local. i'm sure the bigger stores around your area will get at least a few bodies in (part of being an authorized dealer). while everyone else is waiting for adorama and amazon to fill approximately 3 million backorders, you pay a $100 premium and walk out with a D300 the day they arrive.

The D300 is a great camera, and very probably the greatest camera in this range.
You just need to get it for the right reasons.
The right reasons are the features. So get this camera because you either actually need something specific that is not available in cameras for half the price (and I really doubt that you need something like that), or get it because you like having a long and impressive list of specs on paper.
Note: don't let anyone tell you that there is something wrong with the second reason, that's why I have one pre-ordered from Adorama. Its your money and if you wanna spend it like that instead of getting 20" wheels for your car - enjoy! just remember that it won't be so impressive in a year or so when the D400 is out...

Don't buy this camera for image quality. For 2000USD you can get a (why not used?) D80/D200 with an extra flash, filters and better lens - which will simply give SUPERIOR pictures.

Oh hey, I just realized that I currently have enough in savings for a Canon 40D and then some.

It is *vitally important* that I not deplete my savings to buy a Canon 40D.

I have enough saved to buy 2x A700s but I'm not going too.

because im unemployed -____- (whoever said being an aero eng would net me loads of $$$ was wrong)

Might be worth waiting to see what the 50D is like. ;)

>>92409

I think the key there is being an *employed* aero engineer will get you big $$$.

if your town is a decent size, those are probably also backordered. if its not, then your local camera shop probably isnt that high of a priority in getting the new bodies.

I'm actually thinking that that's the case. Given how good the D3 and D300 apparently are at high-ISO noise, that's going to put some serious pressure on Canon to catch up (and/or surpass them).

The main reason, though, is just that I'm about $2500 in debt to my credit card companies right now, so the purpose of my savings is to build it up to the point where I can pay things off.

Ouch, been there. Better off with the peace of mind of clearing debts than having anyone breathe down your neck.

Bad photography habit + two girlfriends in completely different states = monetary woes for AC.

But also pr0ns!

So it evens out in the end. If things go as planned, my savings will pass my debt starting in January.

Two girlfriends in different states? You rogue! Who said that photographers don't get chicks? :D

It's true that being in a relationship does cost money. It's funny comparing the married men to the single in how they spend their money.

that would have been me :(
hey, it didnt work for me... amidoinitrite?

though my g/f does like me being a photographer, it hasnt scored me any on top of that.

r.e OP:
if i were you, id consider whether this is simply a case of simply "having the newest toy"
if thats the case, go for it! as previously stated, its your money.

BUT!!!
if you only want something to progress with, youd be so much better off with a cheaper body and getting some nice glass to help you cover things like DOF and the rest.

simply put:
sick body leaving little moneys for crap glass =
bum decision + average photos from crap lens.

a meh' body with sick glass = booyaaa images! + better learning curve

>>92395

I would not suggest doing this. Get the d300 and save up for glass.

Hells Yes it is.

here comes ma two cents......

its going to be a good camera so if you want one get one. im very tempted myself. the only problem i have is that it would be very simple for me to not use the equipment i have at the moment and blame the lack of a "better camera" to justify getting one. almost like the equipment is more important than me organizing projects.

i agree with getting one this early on IF your really going to use it, a lot. its going to depreciate in price a massive amount after the first year its out so you may as well get your monies worth.

if we all procrastinated and waited for the next "better" camera we would never buy anything.

Don't really care if you're a beginner wanting a DSLR for the first time.

All i care about is how much money will you have left to spend on lens/filters/accessories?

Because that equation should be paramount.

not worth upgrading from my d200
>> Anonymous
>>92654

why not?
>> c8h10o2n4
get the d200, but weht you rly compare, get a d80 with two lenses. you get almost the same for not as much cash. that's what i plan.
