CANON. Also, does the Pentax have noise? It seems like everything but Canon has at least some noise and hot pixels -- they're not hard to clone out, but damnnnn, it shouldn't happen.

Canon has noise and hot pixels, too. They're sensors just have less noise than all the competitors, but not enough to let that be a deciding factor. EVERY sensor has hot pixels.

Not as such, no

Canon has the least noise, so I attached a cat bell to it, to even things out with the competition.

The difference between Canon and Nikon is shocking enough, now when you compare crap like Minolta...

I'd say the question is: Canon 400D or Nikon D40 + money. Because the D40X is for dumb people who believe 10MP is much better than 6MP.

And there are Pentaxes and Olympuses, too. It depends on what's desired in a camera.

Safe bet: Any Canon loyalist you meet on the internet or on the street probably spent way more money than they were comfortable with on their camera. Same goes for any Nikon loyalist, any Pentax loyalist, etc.

See, when you spend a month's salary on a camera, you want to feel like you made the very best choice. You don't want to look stupid. And since you can't just go spend another month's salary on a rival camera system to be sure, that usually just means blind loyalty and pointless claims of superiority. My Canon focuses faster than your nikon, my nikon has better white balance than your canon, etc etc blah blah blah. God forbid that any camera that costs more than a grand is equally the best.

You see the same thing with guys who spend 4000 bucks on a road bike, or really in any hobby where someone spends way outside their budget.

That's where my Olympus rules. Every time I feel like spending a month's salary on a new lens, I find out that I have to order it over the internet from abroad and wait several weeks until it arrives; so I just get some $10 Soviet lens and play with it instead.

They made a few excellent DSLRs, then sold their technology and patents and everything to Sony, who fucked it up.
>> Anonymous
if you need to ask - you should not be buying a DSLR.

:( gone are the days when holding a dslr was enough to seperate a "photographer" from someone who likes taking pictures.

I approve of this anon's second comment. People are now buying Dslrs when they clearly don't need them. when a point and shoot digital will do just fine. half of them own these wonderful dslrs and will never EVER use them to there full potential. not even close. It's like buying a hayabusa and being a casual rider. or buying a alienware to surf the internet.

So wait, photographers can't like taking pictures?

Shit, I'm doing it wrong.

A point-and-shoot and a SLR differ not only in functions. My grandfather (who's far from amateur - he's been into photography since WW2) has a Nikon film SLR that he uses with a single 28-200 lens and nearly always in full auto mode. He doesn't need most manual controls the camera has; but he wants responsiveness and grip and he can afford it, so why not?

What, leaving practically everything and just putting some comfier grips and a new badge on is fucking up?

You know what he meant. There's a difference between people who do things for art and those who just do it because they like indulging their vanity on MySpace and/or having an aide to memory.
>> Anonymous
>>64641
So what? What's the problem with more people using SLRs? What's the problem with using an SLR taken-picture as an aide to memory? The only problem I can see with that is overly pretentious people from myspace/dA complaining about SLRs becoming mainstrea... ohhh!

I actually think it's good. Bigger market = more buyers = more competition = lower prices, and low priced, high quality photographic tools is just what everyone desires, isn't it? Unless you're stupid enough to think paying a premium to take photos makes them more original and artistic.

I didn't say there was a problem. But there's a difference between someone who "likes taking pictures" and someone who is serious about photography as an art.

That was my whole point and my only post ITT.
