okay, so I wanted to try shooting people candidly today. It's extremely hard in a town that consists mostly of highway Ive found...

There was this guy though. He's always selling watermelons or rabbits in front of a local thrift store. I noticed him sleeping and went towards him.

C&C is welcome, but don't bother with just telling me shitsux, I know none of these are very good.

Anyway, I realized this first was was pretty terrible so I started trying to get closer to him. Soft as hell, I know.

I think I did marginally better with this one, but I'm still not happy about it. A car drove by pretty close (this was in the middle of a parking lot) and he woke up. That kind of spooked me because I was standing no more than 10 feet away from him by now so I went back to my car before he noticed what I was doing.

I stupidly focused more on his truck than I did on him, oh well though. I lost the game today, but at least I tried. I'll try again another day.

Sorry guys, deleted the first shot because I hadn't noticed, but his entire tag number was visible in the shot and I'm not really comfortable posting that.

But in slightly less crappy news, I tried panning and it uh...panned out much better, I think. This guy noticed me taking his picture and revved his bike at me

BANA-BUG!
I almost wish it wasn't such an interesting looking Bug, because I think this shot looks better in black and white, but I really don't want to give up the color of the car and lose the context of the Bana-Bug.

I'm also not sure about the crop either. Hills are weird. This crop is at the same angle that the picture was taken because I was standing on level ground, where the road goes up a large hill. The furniture store across the highway was on more or less the same level as I, and I tried to keep it as even as possible. Should I give up on keeping that level and make the image level to the road instead, though? That would be less accurate, but it might look better. I'm not entirely sure.

lens for these shots is the Sigma 17-35 f/2.8-4, by the way. I kept it at 35mm (56mm on crop) for the last three, the deleted shot was at 32mm (~51mm)

You should have gotten closer to the sleeping guy. Motorcycle is okay.

So any constructive C&C on these guys? I know what I did wrong with the watermelon guy for sure, but what should I have done? How would you have framed that picture?

I didn't know you ever left your house

It's more likely than you think.

Gimme a few minutes to eat and I'll do a crappy drawing concerning the watermelon's one composition.

i think you shouldve gotten closer, captured more of his face, and probably change the angle so that the back of the pickup was facing you.

the deleted one actually showed more of the back of the truck, but I agree that I should have gotten closer and focused more on him. I was just nervous, I guess, photographing a guy I've never met while sleeping.

of course, but its probably best to confront your fear on someone whos sleeping rather than someone live first, ie if you wanted to get someone doing manual labor and then tried to get close... well you know.

he's a street vendor, though. there's nothing to stop people from stealing from him when he's asleep and I didn't want him to wake up and assume I was stealing his precious watermelons =p

Ive taken shots of construction workers before and they've usually just left me alone, they dont care except for the stupid one that will do that catcall crap.
