First set of photos Martin !!7Y/4hgHhvM/
Hey /p/, havent posted in a while.

Went to a gig last night, got 3 sets of photos to show you. This is the first set - the others will be posted later.

The band are called "First signs of Frost", you can find them on myspace if you want.

Please ignore the fagborders/'watermark', these are the set I sent to the artist and I like to promote myself! :)

Interesting photo, how the lead singer appears twice.
I assume its where, my flash fired, and whilst the shutter was open for the remaining 1/5th of a second - someone else used a flash.

nice photos! I'm going to be doing a few shots of friends gig next week. Does /p/ have any advice? I know that using a wide angle is common and also should I go for a prime lense?

I dislike the crop&framing on this, although the light streaks compliment the pose of the basist.

Are you using 1st or 2nd curtain sync? If your camera/flash support 2nd curtain, go with that as it will make the subject appear to be leaving trails, rather than following a trail.

Pretty good images overall, though. ^_^

Thankyou. Your best bet is to shoot manual and experiment with the settings. Every gig I shoot the lighting is different. But I usually base my settings around this:
ISO 400
f/3.5 (as low as my lens allows)
1/60th-1/5th (depending on effect desired)
1/4th flash power (60deg Tilt, with Bounce card)
Goodluck!

>>205350
Im guessing 1st; as the flash fires first as soon as the shutter is opened.
Thanks.

D80 can do 2nd-curtain/rear-curtain sync. I don't know how to turn it on cos I've never used a D80, but your manual does. ^_^

Played with the settings, when set to rear it flashes twice, once on the shutter opening, and again when it closes. I guess its time I should rtfm.
>> Martin !!7Y/4hgHhvM/
>>205376
rtm and couldnt find a way to stop it flashing at the beginning. Does anybody know if this is possible?

Sorry to bump old thread.

these are all very nice, VERY typical, show shots.
the first one is my favorite i think.

So you put watermarks on your photos, put shitty borders around them and use a flash at a concert?

Triple fuck you, for you then!
>> Martin !!7Y/4hgHhvM/
>>205460
Yeah I know, very cliché but its what the band want.

>>205461
Borders = Presentation. Makes my photos stand out against others.
Watermarks = Self Promotion. I actually make money out of my hobby. therefore I win you lose.

>flash at a concert?
A flash is a must have to get the desired effect and to maintain a sharp image. Without one my photos would be obsolete compared to other photog's images and therefore I wouldnt be asked to come and shoot.

What the fuck kind of shows do you go to where they allow flash photography from so close to the stage?

You'd get kicked out of most venus where I live for that kind of shit.
>> Martin !!7Y/4hgHhvM/
>>205474
Are you sure you've just not been thrown out for you foul mouth? Everywhere allows flash photography. You must have some real tough venues in your area.

San Francisco, CA.
I know for a fact that most of the big venus here do not allow flash photography.

>big venus
This venue had around 250-300 people in? Not big.
The in-house photographer also uses a flash hence why I use mine.
>> Anonymous
Gotcha.

Yeah, I think a lot of the venus here in San Francisco have house photographers who don't take kindly to other people shooting the band.

Great photos, by the way! I wish I could try out my flash at shows to see if I could get similar effects.

Maybe its TTL pre-flash or something, try it on some moving objects. rtfm about it.
Nice pics.
>> Anonymous
>>205459
If your shooting TTL then its the pre-flash required to get proper exposure, only way to get rid of it is to shoot manual.
>> TheGeneral !m7n7x2Yyfo
>>205689
nope, you have to disable it on the flash, IIRC.

shooting manual does nothing, not on my camera anyway, it always pre-flashes even when in manual.
>> Anonymous
>>205697
My bad for not clearly stating putting the flash in manual.
>> okto
>>205474
Probably because you go to shitty mainstream venues, scenester. Also, using flash at shows is super common. Most PJs use flash if they can, at least as fill.

>>205376
>>205459
Like Anon said, meter preflash. It flashes just before it opens the shutter to meter, then opens the shutter and fires for the exposure. With 1st curtain, those two events are so close together your eye can't discern them, so it looks like one flash.

Question about flashes. Is the rear/2nd curtain flash a setting on the flash or the camera? I'm planning on getting a 1000D but i heard the entry levels lack rear curtain setting. Will a 430EX (II or not) allow me to use rear curtain flash?
>> TheGeneral !m7n7x2Yyfo
>>206075
the fuck is a 1000D? but on my 350D the setting is in the C.Fn. Menu. C.Fn 9 i think.
