not sure about price, and lenses an so on, which will probably run you more than the 150 bucks, but if you're looking for a film SLR, i'd recommend starting her off with an N65. That was my first camera, aside from a Canon a1, and it worked out fantastically for me! :)

Craigslist, dude, craigslist. I'm sure you can find some cheap stuff on eBay too. Any Nikon film SLR is going to be awesome, because it'll get her into the enormously backwards-compatible system. I'll also suggest the Pentax K1000 as a wonderful film camera. I'll hazard you against the older Canons, like the A1 or AE1, since they use FD glass, a mounting system that's now obsolete because of the EOS system.

using canon EOS system also lets you use all of the aforementiod systems...

some of nikon's older lenses actually work better on EOS, lol

does it have to be new? eBay is fine too.

Not exactly. You trade one annoyance for another. With some of the low end Nikons, the meter won't work with non-AF lenses. They will still mount and otherwise function normally. You can mount them on EOS cameras with an adapter and the meter will work, but you lose aperture coupling. That means you manually have to open the aperture up to focus and stop down to shoot for each shot.

While I think it's bullshit that Nikon disables metering with AI lenses on cheap cameras, I'd still rather have auto aperture and no metering than metering and have to manually stop down.

I wouldn't spend to much money on her. Because if she was really interested in photography, she would have bought at least a crappy point-and-shoot a long time ago. Then she would have learned more about it and moved up to a slr. Anyway if you really want to waste money on her, might as well go with an old manual Nikon. Best lenses ever made, the AI's, and she's learn basics of photography.

QFT.

Pentax KM is also good if you can find one. It's basically the same as a K1000 but with an auto-timer and depth-of-field preview.
