OK gearfags. Lens time.

I have a Canon XTi, need my next lens. On a budget of around $500, plus hood, etc.

I'm very interested in the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6, for the USM and IS mostly, plus higher quality than my kit lens. Of course I'd love the f2.8, but out of budget for now. If I require brokeh, I have my 50mm 1.8.

Since it's a walking around lens, and I need to work on things like composition, seems like a decent place to start.

Any other lens I should be looking at?

the 17-85 is the kit lens with USM and IS

it doesn't have better image quality, and is actually slower than the kit lens on the wide end

the tamron 17-50 2.8 is the one you want, stellar image quality and 2.8, also UNDER $500 with the hood included

would i buy one? fuck no, it's a tamron

but it's good enough if you can stomach it

Why would he look at the 10-20 or 70-200 as a walkaround lens?

Point taken. I am really interested in the glass quality between the two - reviews seem to show that the IS/USM version is of noticeable quality compared to the kit lens, of which I see the abberation the most (I've been recently shooting at a -1/3-2/3EV for this reason in sunlight.)

I do have a quicker lens in the 50mm at 1.8, although it's fixed, of course.

I guess my next question is, does the IS compensate for not being able to afford L series with the features I want? I like DC's recommendations, and I'll keep looking at those as well.

The 17-85 isn't worth the $400+ difference between it and the 18-55 IS. Just save up for an L lens or the Tamron.

The IS simply allows you to handhold at a slower shutter speed than you normally would be able to which can help you stop down your lens for sharpness without having to have high ISO or shutter speed, so not really.

you'll see that the $180 18-55 IS is better at every comparable focal length than the $500 17-85 IS

it's at end of life cycle and is in need of a replacement, it was never a stellar lens

the 70-200 is fucking long

the 10-20 is fucking wide

unless a "walking around lens" is long or wide, disregard those, DC sucks cock

and a 17-40 is stupid as fuck on crop unless you have a film body or plan on buying a 5d/1ds

$650 can be better spent

then i would return it and buy a 28 1.8 and a 50 1.4 and lol

After reading that, I'm now looking a bit more closely at the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

Not as wide-angle, but I don't typically use the wide angle at full-core anyway, at least on my 18-55 kit lens...

Thoughts on the 28-135?

Yes, buy the one I'm selling on ebay
>> Anonymous
>>219624

guess what, the 17-85 is the ef-s version of the 28-135

same thing and same issues as the 17-85

it's good enough but not quite there

you won't be unhappy with them (well maybe you will) but you will want better

Of course, the lens I want most is the 75-200L IS/USM, but I'm a long ways off...

Damn these Amazon gift vouchers. They make me want to spend money (like they're supposed to.)

28/2.8. If you want to work on composition, get a prime. The 28/2.8 is the second-cheapest EF lens.

Actually if you use the site>>219614posted you can compare the 17-85 with the 28-135 and it seems to me that the 28-135 blows the 17-85 out of the water...
