Okay, /p/, I need your help. I am a Amateur photographer looking to buy my first "real" camera. I am deciding between these 3, a battle royal including the Canon E0S 30D SLR, the Canon digital rebel XTi EOS SLR, and the Nikon D80 digital SLR. I need help choosing the best one. Only the finest will prove instrumental and deem itself worthy enough to be used by me.The losers will be sacrificed to the divine god of photography, and destroyed at the altar of destiny. Can /p/ help me out?

How serious are you about photography? How often do you think you'll use the camera. Do you already have any Canon or Nikon lenses?

I would personally go for a Canon 20D. It's essentially the same camera as the 30D for significantly cheaper (you can get a refurb for ~$700). I'm partial to Canon though, because I already have EOS lenses. The D80 is a nice choice as well. Thumbs down for the XTi though, the ergonomics are bad compared to the other choices and it's not as durable as the others (plastic body vs. magnesium).

oh thats right, everyone knows the amount of mp doesn't really matter if the IQ of a 6mp cam is even better.

If a camera gets too many negative marks against it, there shall be CONSEQUENCES! 5 X's shall result in redemption.

The camera with the most positive marks will be teh winrar. 5 Positive marks will result in temporary immunity until it bests its opponent or vice versa.

So my vote is get the XTi and spend the extra cash on glass.

You want good body, so 30D. D80 might be a good body, but haven't ever even touched one, so I can't tell.

But don't go for a 400D (XTi), it's horrible. Ergonomics are bad. I could bet that my hand would be hurting after couple hours of use. Oh, and it feels like a toy.

I would say Nikon D80, since that's what I have, although I would have preferred to get the D200. Oh, well. That's $400 less than what I could have paid, but I do miss out on a more rugged body with weather sealing. The D80 felt a little small to me, so I got a battery grip permanently attached to it.

The 30D/20D don't feel too bad to me, and would probably be what I would get if I were to go Canon. In fact, the two bodies I was looking at before I got a dSLR were the Canon 20D and the Nikon D70.

As what eku said, I don't like the feel of the Canon 400D XTi. Holding it for a bit made my hand hurt, and my hands are small. Give it a feel yourself. Maybe you'll like it, and then you'll save money that you can use on better lenses.

Have any nearby camera shops? The image quality and features on the three cameras are pretty much equal (well, the XTi loses a bit because it's a low-end camera rather than midrange like the others, so it doesn't have things like separate control dials for shutter speed and aperture, but it makes up for that with an extra few hundred bucks in your pocket that you can spend on glass). It's pretty much gonna come down to which one you feel most comfortable with. Everyone here is going to recommend the one that they got pretty much because it's the one they got.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>66056
Huh. I forgot halfway through that post what my point was.

My point was that you should go down to a camera shop (or, at a minimum, the local Best Buy) and try out each camera. Feel it in your hand. If the XTi feels fine to you, go with that. If you think it'll be painful to use, get the 30D or D80

Why thank you good sir, it seems that the XTi's days are numbered. Perchance the winner shall be the D80 or the 30D? We shall see henceforth!

Pentax K10D

Great camera, built in shake reduction, and any K-mount lens will work with it. On the subject of K-mount lenses: Cheap, numerous, and so long as you at least stick with ones marked SMC-Pentax, great optics.

The best one there would be the 30D since it's a class above the XTi. And you didn't give us a budget so unless you need to save money, there's no reason to go for the XTi unless buying the 30D would mean not having enough money for glass.

K10D is another option, but there is a serious lack of good long telephoto glass for it. Built in shake reduction and weather seals are good, except as far as I know, the latter is no good until Pentax makes weater sealed lenses.

Well, I intended originally to purchase a 30D at officedepot (currently out of stock) they now have the XTI which I know strongly abhor. I am contesting the 30D against the D80, but I had the intent of paring this Canon 200mm lens

If I choose the D80, I will not purchase that lens due to incompatibility.

1. Pentax makes two weather-sealed lenses: the 16-50/2.8 and the 50-135/2.8. There may also be some older K-mount weather-sealed lenses, I don't know.
2. Even if they didn't, a weathersealed body without a weathersealed lenses is better than nothing. It won't fully accomplish its purpose, but at least it protects against spills and other assorted maltreatment. This is a minor point, however.
3. I think it's safe to assume most photographers (and thus probably the OP, too) don't usually need or use anything past a medium telephoto. AFAIK, the only types of photography where extremely long telephotos (say, >200mm) are typically used are wildlife, sports, and commercial fashion shots. It's a consideration, of course, but most photographers stick (either out of laziness, creative decision, or just being too broke to buy long glass, I don't know which) to shorter focal lengths. At least all of the photographers I know and most of the others I otherwise know about.
4. Third-party and older lenses. Are you telling me out of all the telephotos Pentax, Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina, and everyone else have made for the K-mount, now and in the past decades, there isn't a decent selection of telephoto lenses?

I think the K10D is the OP's best choice (assuming, as others have said, he can get a good lens selection with these) followed by the 30D and the D80, though I could see switching the other two.

But like ac said, the OP's best idea would be to go to a camera shop, hold them, and buy the one of the three that feels the best. That outweighs all the minor technical difference between all the cameras mentioned.

The XTi is not a bad camera. It may seem like it from this thread and my own bashing, but I only stated my own opinion as to how it felt in my hands.

ac owns one and has taken many good photos with it, but as stated many times, it's not the camera but what's behind the camera that makes good photos.
>> Anonymous
>>66136
I don't think anyone is gonna say the XTi can't make excellent images. I owned one and it certainly could. The problem is with the ergonomics and build quality of it.

so great to see some love for K10D... I managed to get the body, 18-55, 50-200 (both Pentax-made lenses), battery grip, spare battery, 4GB 150x SD card, and a bunch of other goodies for what will be under $1,000 (including shipping) after mail-in rebate

my reasons for getting this camera:
- first and foremost, this was the best fit for my hands (I tried this camera out at a local shop months ago)
- the weather sealing wasn't something that I *needed* but I figured I'd rather be safe than sorry... it'd suck to get a camera and not be able to take some shots because of paranoia
(see http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1036&thread=23134169 for someone running tap water over the camera)
- the shake reduction allows me to take shots on the go (a tripod is still useful, but it's a pain in the butt to lug around... especially if you like to photograph wildlife)
- the RAW button... NEED I SAY MORE?!
- unlimited continuous JPEG shooting is nice, especially if you have a decent SD card (and 3.0 FPS is more than most people need)
- people seem to forget that Pentax ruled the SLR market at one point... and those lenses work on this camera, too (UNLIKE D40's!!! Nikon made a mistake here, I think.)

around Christmas, I was thinking of getting a D40. I finally found one in person, I realized that it was far too small. my heart moved to the K10D and I researched it relentlessly until I heard about the Fuji S5 Pro coming out. I was disappointed to see that, while it offered nice skin tones and had the same reliable body of the D200, it was just too expensive compared to the K10D. I felt like I wasted my time waiting for the camera that just didn't speak to me.

hold the camera, take some test shots, read owner opinions at DPReview.com, and think of how Apple was considered to be a joke in the computing world, even as it grew in popularity...
>> Phesarnion
My vote goes firmly to the D80. It's tough, reliable and has a HUUUUGE range of accessories and lenses which will work with it. Although i am a little nikon biased (3 Nikons so far and still going) alternatively, go for the D40x, and buy a nice lens to go with it, but remember that the lens will need an internal motor for autofocus to work with the D40x, which will up the price quire a way.

D40/D40x/XTi would all be great if they didn't feel like toy cameras... go for a 30D, D80, D200, or K10D
