holy shit.. i think my motherboard is dead...

okay here's the problem. I have a hard drive that's partitioned into 3. c: e: f:

E has all my photos ... really wished i had backed them up and F my music... again wish i had backed them up.

If i reinstall windows on C: partition
(since getting a new mobo will require me to do so) will it erase the data on the same HDD but partitioned?

... i'm think maybe i'll get a new HDD too and install windows on that new one so everything is still on my HDD

also i know this aint /g/... sorry

Apparently you don't.

fuck off, there's no harm in him asking here since people know him .. and thus will try a bit harder to help him out.

Jeremo, I wouldn't risk it.. What I'd do instead is buy a cheap 50gb portable storage device.. go into a computer shop and transfer your files over there.
Then you're free to wipe the whole HD without any risks involved.

Dude, just buy a external usb hard drive caddy, plug your hard drive into it and you should be able to copy your data off the partition to a working computer.

In addition to the above you could just plug your drive into a working computer but you need to ensure its set to be the Slave drive.

i know how to do that slave setting with IDE drives but the one i've got is a SATA...... should i just google that? haha.

thanks for the help by the way.

Hey Jeremo..

What he said.
Basically there's another slave plug for a 2nd HD. Plug it in there on your gf's PC and copy 60GB over to her HD. Then burn, copy it onto port storage or copy it to your new HD once you bought new stuff.

to save that extra step i'll just get a new HDD and install XP on that then plug the two 300 GB HDDs i currently have.

right, thank alot, i'm going to get back to test whether or not it's the MB or the PSU... cause that will obviously determine whether i need a new motherboard.
>> ????? !wAHA/GeRU.
If you reinstall to C:, you aren't rewriting the other partitions, so all data on the other 2 partitions will remain. Depending on how you do it, reinstalling on C: won't remove all your data on C: either (repair install).

changing your motherboard doesnt make you reinstall windows. ive done it several times. it just makes you reauthenticate it.
