Problem... Anonymous
Hi /p/

on my last trip to Japan i bought a 450D (Kiss X2 or XSI or whatever) as a kit with 18-55 and 55-250mm lenses.

My problem is that the 18-55 often makes really blurry images even though the shutter speeds are relatively fast (like 1/60 in for this one) and there is really nothing else to focus on.. i think the IS might be broken.. or am i just not doing something right? (first time i owned a SLR)

The 55-250mm lens makes MUCH sharper pictures and i can actually HEAR and SEE the IS working.. on the 18-55 i can't.. i'm back in Germany now.. any chance i can get this replaced under warranty in Germany? (i didn't notice the problem until i returned since i didn't have time/space to DL all the pics)

If i can't get it replaced or it is just crap in general, what other lens should i get as replacement?
I want the 17-85 one but it is soo expensive as stand alone.. are there any other cheaper (non canon) but also good lenses in that range?

Thanks!
(btw. the pic is crap, i just wanted to show a problem image.. see how nothing is in focus, auto focus is on and shutter speed is fast)

Nothing in focus = Problem with focus = The problem is with the autofocus, not IS.

Take a picture with the camera perfectly still in a bright place, then come back.

I have the same lens, and while I'm disappointed with it's softness, it's at least better than this. However, try manually focusing on something that covers a large depth of field (like a piano keyboard) to see if anything is in focus. If not, then your lens is shitty and you need to get another one.

true.. i guess what i meant was that i am not sure it really is the focus.. how would it look if the camera was in focus but the IS decided to adjust from full left to full right just when the image was taken? Is what you see clearly out of focus or could it be caused by camera shake/bas IS?

I just put it on a tripod about 1.5m away from a cloth lit in direct sunlight, seemed fine (though lacking sharpness, but for kit lens acceptable, i guess). Crop attached.

So, as you said, it seems like the auto focus is sometimes not working at all.. what could be cause?
Cheap circ. pol filter? (i used one sometimes)
But even without a pol (just uv) it sometimes messes up the focus.

And again, it is weird that it doesn't seems to happen with the 55-250

sorry don't have a piano near me.. so i tried the cloth... here is a crop with the 55-250, i think it looks better, it is at f4 vs f5.6 with the 18-55.. both where at 55mm even though the 18-55 seems to still be at a wider angle (same area is smaller).

So i want a replacement for the 18-55.. what should i get that's <= 300 euro?

Thanks for the help btw!

forgot the pic :(

Yeah that sharpness is good for that lens, so there's a problem with autofocus. Try manual focus so we can see if you can focus objects far away.

if you think the 17-85 is expensive.. look up the 17-55 2.8.. now thats an ef-s lens..

well with tripod and lots of light the auto focus seems to be doing almost as well as manual focus on something about 1/2km away @ 55mm with f5.6...

i think i may know my problem though, the focus ring on the 18-55 is extremely sensitive, the slightest breath on it and it goes from in focus to totally out of focus.. maybe on those shots the weight of the UV + Pol gives the focus ring enough momentum to overshoot when focusing a from near to far?

attached show with man focus on power lines 1/2km away, roof in front is about 150m away, pine branch on left about 15m

the 17-85 is around 330 on same site

what i meant was that though was, isn't there a reasonably priced canon compatible lens from another manufacturer.. like sigma or tamron etc that still better then the 18-55 kit lens?

OR.. is the 17-85 at least a reasonably better (since it's also 'just' a kit lens.. for a more expensive kit though)

ok, which of the following two would is better:
Canon EF 28-105mm 3.5-4.5 II USM
or
Canon EF-S 17-85mm 4-5.6 IS USM

Thanks

Just so you know the Kiss cameras can only be replaced or repaired in Japan, so if you break it you are fucked..

>>278340like sigma or tamron etc that still better then the 18-55 kit lens?

sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and tamron 17-50 f/2.8 are both better than the 18-55 and 17-85

holy moly! from now on i shall use an underwater case for my canon rebel kiss f everywhere i go

Man. That poor 17-85 is the red-headed stepchild of the Canon lens range. It gets a lot more hate than it deserves.

i'm the guy who said the next 5D will be under 3000$

i predict a 15-50/60/70 f/4 IS in the $500-800 range next year
