Hi /p/
First time visitor, first time poster.

My question is this.
I'm into rundown shit, like abandoned buildings, old hospitals, mills, factories, you name it. Haunted shit with little to no lighting etc.

I'm also starting to get into student films. By which I don't mean I'm a film student, by which I mean I'm an econ student who wants to film shit.

Anyway I need to get a camera, and I'm looking to spend very little (around 200 at the high end), but at the same time I don't want everything I film to look like a home movie (I'd be happy more with like, documentary style stuff)

So what cameras do you recommend for someone in my position. (low lighting, low budget, low experience)or if you can't recommend anything specifically, what brands, settings, numbers, features, etc. to look for.

If you get a lot of these threads I'm sorry, but figured I'd ask.
Thanks alot!

Probably should also mention that Used would probably be th eonly way to hit my price window.

at least he's polite. I'd help if I were more knowledgeable with video.

Then where do you suggest I take the inquiry good sir?

/p/ is the only place to go with film questions. i don't see a problem there. but you have to be aware of the fact, that there's almost nobody on /p/ who can actually help you with this. wish i could tell you anything better than that.

surely someone knows something about it, I mean there has to be at least one film student in here.

save up a couple more months. Get a used 3CCD ENG deckless cam, a good stereo mic and a sony D8 video walkman. That's the cheapest rig I can think of that'll get you something that isn't shit to work with.

As expensive as people here think photography is, videography is 5-10millyarnX more expensive

Or you could just beg your parents for a cheap miniDV cam and lulz it up

Best post yet. If you could give me a little more on the specifics of what all that is, or even better direct me to where I can find out myself I'd be really grateful.

Thanks alot!

You can choose only one:
[_] >$200
[_] doesn't look like a home movie

Sorry bud, but $200 is less than most people spend on a fucking camera flash.
You cannot get a good digital video camera for that price, and you probably can't get a good video camera of any kind for that price.

BUT if you don't care about sound I'll sell you a Yashica Super8 film camera for... $80? $75? I know you aren't interested, but I thought I'd offer.

Pic is related because it's the camera I'm talking about.

*<$200

Damn it.
>> Anonymous
>>156979
Wait, everything is under $200?
>> Anonymous
>>156983

No. Damn it.
Camera < $200 = home movies
>> Anonymous
No, it was a joke. "*" being a wildcard character.

Now give me a $199.99 M8.
>> Anonymous
Even a used one?
I mean I want something that at least has a student film quality to it, and I'm not too picky about anything else.
If 200 is far too low then what's a good number for something bare bones used?
>> Anonymous
How do you plan on editing your film?
I'm guessing on a PC?

Yeah nothing special, I figure I'll give it a shot, see how it turns out, and pursue further if there's any reason to

Like I write down little short film scripts constantly, but never really wanted to pursue it as more then a hobby, so I figure this might be a good place to start, just whatever I have/can afford

if youre going to have any dialog, and you dont want it to come out looking like a home movie, you will NEED. as in REQUIRE an external microphone. which means either a camera with a mic input, or something else that can record, then you get to cue up every bit of footage you film which is loads of fun.

i only stress how you will need it because 90% of that home movie feel that you can do something about equipment wise is shitty echoey sound. the only thing that you can improve on image quality wise is lighting and actual frame quality. and thats not a big deal considering you are probably just putting it on the internet.

so get something with a mic input, and some cheap floodlights and with practice your shit will look just as good as someone who spend a few grand on their stuff.

Great just a few quick questions.
What should I look for in an external mic, and how much should I expect to spend?
Thanks alot!

Look for hypercardioid or shotgun mics, depending on how close your subject is going to be.
Rode, shure and sennheisser all make respectable mics marketed for video use.
like>>157516said, pretty much anything is going to be better than the internal mic because of shitty sound quality and camera noise leaking into it.

I just got done shooting for the past 10 hours. Ugh, we had a sony 3ccd (didn't catch the model) and a manfrotto 3068 tripod and 2 continous lights in a tiny room with no airconditioning. That damn tripod is so fucking huge we kept knocking stuff over all night. I think I have some good pics of out setup on my camera that I'll try to upload tomorrow. But we easily had 3000$ worth of gear, and it still needs a lot of post.
Things I learned today: 2 spare batteries is not enough. bring the smallest, heaviest tripod you can indoors, only shoot in building with central air, a hungry crew is a shitty crew.
