Too dark, soft and red.

Too, mm, shoes?

>>157301
Too dark. Otherwise would have been nice.

>>157302
Just a bit too dark. The hand appears to disapper into black background. Otherwise nice.

>>157303
The best photo on this set.
I like how the guitarist is located and lighted, and how there's still some figure playing drums.

>>157306
>>157307
Both are too red. Tone it down maybe?

>>157314
Nice overall photo.

And again. Also way too red. And maybe just a bit too dark.

Is my monitor's calibration off?

No dude... they used red lights at the concert. It's concert lighting, haha.

They're also meant to be a little dark. Too light, and it wouldn't accurately represent the actual conditions at the concert. Also bear in mind that this is color work... it's okay if it runs dark, so long as the color is deep and rich and good. Don't always trust your meter when it tries to tell you that every scene should average out to 18% grey.

Look at the Magnum and Nat'l Geographic shooters... it's about color, not brightness. Check this DAH shot.

One of the things I really need to work on is letting my pictures be dark.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>157531
It's one of the reasons I like B&W... I know I'm only working with a range of tones. Color is super complicated because you're trying to evoke emotion based on your hues... really interesting stuff, especially if you dig color theory.

I'm not trying to sound like I have a big head or something, dude... I just love talking about Magnum and shooters that are way better than I am. I think the only way to learn is to constantly compare yourself to people who simply blow you away.

I don't trust my meter on gigs.
Buy maybe you could have gotten the same atmoshphere just by adding some serious contrast to the shadows?

There's red, and then there's too red. These are too red. I don't like.

The portrait ones are good, but the general crowd and stage shots not so much. Good reportage, but not good photographs in and of themselves.

The thing I try to do when shooting a crowd at an event is pull away from the event for a bit and just watch the crowd for little momentary deviations from the "OMG WE'RE AN EXCITED CROWD" thing: two lovers kissing or fighting, someone giving another a strange look. Gives it a bit more of a human element. A little sticking-out moment amongst the whole crowd makes the crowd and the moment seem more real and immediate than the just a stock crowd shot.

>>157357sorta has this going on with the two guys in the lower left hand area, but they're out of focus enough it doesn't pull together.

An example that comes to mind is this photograph by Abbas taken to cover the Pope visiting somewhere: on the left side of the image, there's people eagerly watching, on the right, a couple is sharing a quick, passionate kiss. (Searching for "kiss" and "pope" in the Magnum archive will probably turn up that one image.)

>>157538
I agree 100% with this. Like Heavyweather said in another thread, one learns an art by copying, and there's no point in copying if you don't compare one's shit to the master's majesty. Painters do it, writers do it, filmmakers do it, everyone does it.
>> Anonymous
>>157554

Just checked. "Pope" goes in the text field- for some reason it's not a keyword for the image- and it turns up a few others, but it's still right there.

I swear Magnum's phototaggers are wonky. They've tagged pictures of Scianno's father hugging his sister "Embrace (Sexual)" and a DAH photograph at a NASCAR event, where there's a crowd way off on the other side of a stadium (where you can't make out even anyone's skin color) "White People."

Ever been to a NASCAR event?

I find no fault with that tagging.

hmm, maybe i should of been more specific, i agree that learning from others is a good way, to mimic and advance yourself....
...but, wanking over your own photos while going on your own little spiritual ride with them is comming off a bit pretentious on how great you make yourself. (ignore famous photographers because thats not part of my rant)
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA

Thanks for that magnum info, I love checking out Abbas' work. And yeah, the tagging on Magnum's archives are hilarious. It's pretty amazing though, considering you can with a single click license an HCB photo, just like that. Assuming you pay enough, of course. But what a great service they provide to interested parties... Magnum continues to blow me away. I love that Eli Reed teaches at UT, that's so damn great.

I feel you on the whole idea of searching for the moment within the moment, the frame within a frame. It's my finest joy when I can actually get that in a picture... it's not often, as it's so often associated with pure luck, though I will admit, the more I practice at getting those moments, the luckier I get. Funny how that works.

I guess I figure 20 photos in 100 will be good, 2 might be great, and maybe 1 will be really phenomenal, worth keeping around. It's often a much worse ratio, but that's why it pays to shoot a lot.

Another crowd shot, mostly because she was a hot girl, and I needed to capture said hotness. It's funny that the dude over her shoulder has his eyes glued to her. It's only a decent photo, though. (Still, wicked hot girl.)

I might agree with the spiritual ride part, since I don't think it's bad to get in touch with the reasons why we take pictures. I believe that reflection and critical thought are incredibly important parts of being aware and acting members of our world.

I don't think that's wanking, but you're welcome to your opinion. I also don't think I ever said I was great. I just posted some pictures and talked about color.

Again, I could bring it back down temperature-wise until it looks like white light, but it wasn't white, it was golden-yellow spill light. I don't want to misrepresent the actual color present.

But which is better? More truthfull colors, or better looking colors?
>> Anonymous
>>157714
The colors that best bring out what the performance was like. Usually the real colors, although once I completely futzed the white balance on a shot in some weird way that made blue and red look like yellow and green.

The wonderful 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D Nikkor. I've used the 70-200 f/2.8 VR, and it's UNBELIEVABLE. Tack sharp and butter smooth, y'know?

As a photojournalist, I have to say the truth.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s

I appreciate that but I would have taken just a touch out of it to make it look slightly more normal while keeping the orange wash. Im sure our eyes do autowhite ballancing.

I do agree with heavyweather about truthfulness, even for landscape I think its important to give a true reflection of the scene, presumably why HDR sucks.
