i wondered what the cons of zooming in instead of going nearer are.
of course theres more blur (w/o tripod) but what else?

Depending on lens design, you could lose a stop or two in aperture by using the tele end. Lens could also be less sharp at the tele end.

I want a fixed focal (around 28mm equiv), f/1.8, 6 megapixel for clean image at 800 ISO and rotating flash (similar to Nikon SB-400) on my P&S.

i think more importantly there's a change in perspective between using a wide angle up close and a tele from far away. wide angles "stretch" the distance between the subject and the background and teles flatten the background.
