reverse lens macro Anonymous
sup /p/
I need help with a reverse lens macro.
How do you increase the depth of on the macro? Right now the depth of field is less then a grain of salt. Increasing aperture on the does nothing. I will post some examples of my shots. The lenses used are a sigma f/4 70-300mm and a 50mm manual f/1.8.

>Increasing aperture on the does nothing
Yes it does. It just might not be doing enough for you to see it, especially with that 300. Take it all the way down to f/22 or further. And brace yourself for all sorts of fun trying to focus through a viewfinder stopped down to f/22.

Also: Fuck Sigma and their fake red stripes.

op here. Is it just unavoidable to have a tiny depth of field?
>> Kilz2latex !!3htj9hFDMA4
the closer you get to shit the smaller the depth of field

of course not

You should got to a narrow aperture.

did you use ducktape to fix it?

or is it just to shut out the light?

He's got a 50mm lens duct-taped backwards to the end of the 300mm lens, which lets him focus much more closely than he otherwise would. The tape is to keep 'em together.

>>296190
Duck Tape is a perfectly cromulent term for that kind of tape.

sorry, i am not a native english speaking person. i thought that was the right word? of course i meant: adhesive foil.

i do know the procedure, but i did not know you could just tape them together and it werx, i thought you need special attatchments to fix them firmly. now if he actually uses tape to fix them its no wonder he gets no good pictures.

go to a shop and get yourself a reverse objective holder.

I've actually taken reverse-macro shots by just holding my 18-55 backwards against the mount with my hand.

It didn't work very well, but it worked well enough as a proof of concept. Duct tape keeps out the light and keeps the lens in place, so it probably won't be significantly worse than a reversing ring, optically, and the problems he's having are from lack of depth of field which wouldn't be a problem with the lens mounting so much as it's just a problem inherent to supermacro.

(Duct tape is a stupid idea just because you get adhesive residue all over your lenses, though)

A reversing ring is fairly cheap and takes so much hassle out of the process.

DoF is going to be pretty slim no matter what with a reversed lens, you'll have to suck it up or try stacking.

By suck it up I just mean you'll have to settle for that.

And by stacking I mean focus stacking.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focus_stacking

It's basically combining a load of images with different areas in focus until you eventually have a much larger DoF than originally.

what's better, zoom against 50 mm or the other way round? I achieve maximus magnification (with a shitload of vignetting) putting my kit lens at 18mm in front of my 50mm, but i'm not sure it's the perfect combination.

long focal length mounted, and small lens reversed

300mm tele mounted with a 28mm reversed would give more than 10:1 life size
>> Anonymous
>>296326
how do you calculate equivalent f-stop on that?
>> Anonymous
i have no idea but you'd need a lot of fucking light

and your viewfinder would probably be near useless

1:10 ? 1 centimeter in reality is 10 centimeters on the film/sensor? that would be mikro photography, not makro, is it? (don't know if thats true...)

anyways:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macro_photography
especially: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Automatik-Balgengeraet_mit_Kamera%2C_Objektiv_und
_Umkehrring_(deutsch_beschriftet).jpg

sorry, didnt find it in english though. check leo.dict.org for translation.

i'd like to have one of those, because combining a objective with tape leads to a) residue and b) inacurate work (as mentioned: viewfinder.

i don't know how you call it and i don't know how it would work about that life size = size on sensor thing but canon has a 5:1 lens so i'm sure the math works out one way or another

next im thinking about instead of mounting the 50mm to the 17-55, why not try the 17-55 on my 70-200.. hmm
