This is what I have. Very new to photography and need to know everything there is to know about taking night shots with this one.

Good luck trying to shoot with an outdated Rebel. I wouldn't be surprised if the image quality is worse than a point and shoot.

Ugh, seriously?
Where the fuck did you find that thing, a dumpster?

If it's a loaner camera then it's not so bad, but I hope you didn't pay money for it...
>> Anonymous
Well, since the XT is a few years old, obviously you'll get noticeable more noise if you crank up the ISO. So...get a fast prime?

It was free, jeeze =\ So, what now? :(

Err...noticeably, I meant.

BTW, your question was hella vague. What exactly do you mean about "everything there is to know about taking night shots"?

If you wanted advice on starting photography you picked the wrong place. /p/ is full of pretentious faggots with inflated egos who have no desire but to belittle your equipment choices.

>>249335
Yeah thanks for the heads up, I just realized this 4 seconds ago :( sad, I thought this would be the least friendly board.
>> Anonymous
>>249339
Yeah, i would say /p/ is probably full of the most faggots of any board.
I would advise some of the camera-specific groups on flickr for advice. Most have past threads covering every question you could ask. And people are actually helpful.

That and perhaps pick a few books up from your library. Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson seems highly recommended.

As much as I like Canon, they are putting me in a bad position.

You've got your Rebel user, all fun and games.

You want to upgrade, you've got the $1,000 40D body.

Okay, good stuff. It doesn't have that many more features than the XSi but fine, it's faster and better than what the XSi does.

Great, what happens to someone who has a 20/30/40D?

You want to upgrade, you've got the $2,000 5D that is 3 years old. Sure, it's an oldie but a goodie, but it's still freaking 3 years old.

Or you've got the $4,500 1D or a $7,000 1Ds.

With the D700 and the upcoming D3x, Nikon will have a superior body than Canon at every single price point.

The D80 replacement will be better than the XSi.

The D300 is better than the 40D.

The D700 is better than the 5D.

The D3 is better than the 1D.

The D3x will probably be better than the 1Ds.

And that pains me a lot as a Canon guy that they've been slacking off so much for 3 years.

The last 3 bodies released are a joke. The 40D was less than spectacular. The XSi and XS are there for the low end.

The only reason I am still sticking with them is the unbeatable lens selection Canon still has. Which you will say matters a lot more than a full frame sensor with usable ISO 25,600, but hey, it's a fucking full frame sensor with usable ISO 25,600.

And that's just my rant.

I'm not a tripfag, you dumb cunt. Tripfags are attentionwhoring faggots, and I genuinely believe all boards should be forced anon. But sadly that isnt likely to happen.
>> Anonymous
dont go too high on the iso if you can help it, if your going to do a long exposure or anything past 1/50 you will probably need a tripod or something to rest your camera on. night shots are genaly easier with a large apperature but if its too wide your depth of field will be very shallow. the best way is to just go out and play with settings.

>Don't give me that /p/ has changed bullshit
I don't lurk here much, so I havent seen it turn into a cesspool in quite the same way as other boards.

>holier-than-thou attitude
What holier-than-thou attitude? I only pointed out that pretty much every tripfag i've ever encountered is an attentionwhore. Seems to me like you just might be an incredibly butthurt tripfag posting as Anonymous.

Your whining about tripfags might get a little more credit if you weren't posting on a forum that is predominately full of tripfags. And while I can't say Im really one of those responsible, most of the worthwhile posts in this forum have come from tripfags, not the Anons who post no pictures, talk only about gear, and troll everything.

gtfo, gearfags. I got an XT, and it's JUST FINE for night shots if you keep the ISO at 400 or below. (Mind you, any rebel sucks ass compared to the 40D I now have)
So here are your tips, which could really apply to any camera.
1: Get a remote release
2: Use mirror lockup (Set custom function 7 to 1)
3: Don't cheap out on a tripod
4: Keep the ISO as low as you can for what you're shooting.
5: Check the histogram. Big reason for noise is underexposed images.
6: Enjoy having a DSLR for this instead of a P&S, it's still 100x better.

I have an XT myself and while the noise is somewhat annoying @ 1600, its fine at 800 and thats if you pixelpeep.
Otherwise if you dont pixelpeep high iso night shots are fine, as long as you have the right lens or flash..
