hello /p/

Im here today to ask your advice. i have recently taken intrest in photography and want to get into it as a hobby like most of you. i had some questions about what kind of camera i should get as i am the uber noob at this sort of thing right now. I was wondering what kind of cameras you guys use and what kind of cameras make you guys wet your pants [ if you're passionate about camera's ] I was wondering what the most aforadble camera with exposure settings is, and maybe just the best camera over all to get would be. I live in a sunny town with not much rain, and not much to do so i figure ill be a hermit with my camera. any suggestions /p/ ?

What is your budget? What type of photography interests you the most?

Kind of cameras I use:
Canon Digital Rebel XTi digital SLR, Minolta SR-T-SC II manual-focus film SLR, Minolta Hi-Matic 7s film rangefinder, Canon PowerShot A95 point&shoot digital camera

Kind of camera that makes me wet my pants:
Canon 1DS Mk III, Canon 5D, any other Canon with a one-digit number. Anything from Leica. Although really, my lusts have turned more towards lenses of late.

I don't know about what the most affordable camera with exposure settings is. I know that most (all?) of the Canon A-series PowerShots have them. My favorites are the A6x0 line, which are the successors to my A95. In addition to good exposure controls, they've got a flip-out-and-swivel LCD screen so you can frame shots really high or really low without standing on a chair or crawling on the ground. They're in the $300 range, as I recall.

I use a Cannon Digital Rebel XT. DSLR that lets you adjust just about everything. And its about the best I could do for about $800 (when I bought it).

I use a Canon S3IS, which is probably the best thing for someone to get started with. Available for ~$300, with full manual mode and manual focus, and a 12x zoom lens. I've also used a Canon G2, some small pocket Canon, and I have shot with a Canon EOS-1D.

Wet-pants cameras are Leicas (you'll find that will probably be universal), especially the M3, MP, and M8. Also Hasselblads.

You, sir, know what you are about. The only camera that holds a place of honour in my mind equal to that of the 1D is the Hasselblad 501C.

Well, photography can be a great hobby. You might want to just start off on either an entry level dSLR, like the XTi which was my pic, or go for a used (make sure it is factory *re-tested* by the maker and not just the camera store repacking a returned camera) 30D. After that, an important decision is what lens you want on it, which is the primary advantage of an SLR. The 50/1.8 is currently one of the better values; amazing sharpness, L-class, for about ~$80. Then think about a good kit/zoom. Many people like the 17-85IS, but it is a tad on the pricey side. If you are going to be doing landscape shots and pass up the kit lens, 18-55, then you also might think about the excellent 10-22 (again, pricey, but worth every penny). Finally, for a long tele, the 70-300IS has IQ nearly on par with the excellent 70-200/2.8 with the added 100mm and IS. You might want to wait a little until Canon brings out more models, but that will be in about half a year at the latest. B&H photo has some great deals on cameras and lenses; to get more discounts, simply search around with the PSJ001, PSJ002, etc codes. Searching for "PSJ*" might also work too (these are codes on posters they hand out at conventions). Otherwise, look around to see where you can get lenses for a decent price.

If you do a significant amount of indoor photography, you might benefit from fast lenses and a hot-shoe flash unit although that depends on what you want to shoot.

An XTi, body only, can be had around the $600-$700 range. The D40X and D50 can be less expensive, but then you are also going with a different feature set and some feature-loss.

Above all, enjoy your photography.

Also....Cute photo ;) :)

I use a Nikon D50 primarily with the 50mm f/1.8 prime lens, and it's a beauty. I can do handheld shots at night at 800 ISO at reasonable shutter speeds, no problem. It's an amazing lens.

If I could take my pick, however, I'd go with a Nikon D200. It's got the features I miss like depth-of-field preview and multiple exposures.

For film, I shoot with a Canon EOS Rebel with a Sigma 28-70 lens, usually on Tri-X.

Get a dSLR if you can. Photography is expensive, but they pay for themselves in no time.

The Nikon D50 is absolutely wonderful. You can get good deals at cametacamera.com (not sure of the adress) on kits including camera and two lenses, one for wide-angle (family portraits, 'broad' pictures, landscapes) which is 18-55 mm and one for zoom shots (nature and stuff like that) which is 200-55 mm.
If you can only get one lens, I'd recommend the wide-angle (18-55 mm) as it's best for people/portraits. Just my opinion.
It's nice to have some basic accesories like Photoshop, a bag, an extra memory card and an extra battery.

Photography isn't cheap to start off with, but if you want real good shots, and you're willing to spend a bit, it pays!!!
