/p/'s favorite DSLR-like camera for under $450 is a used DSLR. You can't get much more DSLR-like than that.The original Digital Rebel (not the XT or XTi) is selling for under $400 used at Adorama right now.
Your dog also hates the image quality and lack of control. Look at used Rebels or D50's.
