Olympus E-420 or E-510 with kit lenses. Their kit lenses are great, the bodies are real cheap, and the typical drawbacks to the bodies are things that mostly affect dark indoor lighting shooting and issues pros are more worried about than amateurs or people just starting up with photography.

Pentax K10D and Canon 30D are rugged, weather sealed (the Pentax more so), and on clearance.
Nikon D80 is on clearance.

I'd take the 30D for Canon's nice telephoto lineup to more into some day, and you can get the 55-250 IS for now.

I'm pretty sure the 30D is not weather sealed...

Still I'd grab the 30D anyway over a K10D.

yeah having weather seal would be nice. About how rugged are they though i know most cameras under 1k arent made to take alot of abuse but im looking for something that might survive a small fall

There's chunks missing from my 30D body from when I took that spill in Maine, they can take beating.

In before building houses with Nikons

It's not really "weather" sealed, but it's better than entry level cameras. The K10D is the one I'd trust if you want to get it real wet, but the 30D has a magnesium body and is going to be more likely to survive a beating.

Either way, get the 30D.
