filmfag getting a cannon eos elan.....

wondering if anyone has used it at all, possibly could get some feed back?

I own and use one.

Great little model and pretty much all the new lenses work with it. Only issue I've had with mine is that when I put it into full auto, the flash won't pop up automatically (perhaps a broken elastic band or something) and the camera shuts down in anger. Apart from that, it has the build quality of a tank.

The flash will strobe annoyingly in low light to garner the autofocus, but that can be turned off and augmented anyway.

For the price though, you can't go wrong for a film camera that has all the nifty non digital features that all the top end digital ones have nowadays.

(took these on shitty kodak gold and they ended up in the newspaper)

I'm pretty sure it's just a coincidence, here's it between their SLR and bridge camera. Looks like a pretty direct mash-up between those two with some weird results.

In during all SLRs have the same basic shape.

That EOS 30V looks just like a 30D which looks just like a D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 40D, and 50D, which is hard to tell from a D70, D80, or D90 other than the red stripe and Nikon logos.

Technically the G1 isn't an SLR, but it's specifically designed to look like an SLR because the Japanese are afraid that people will think their penises are small.

are you blind or stupid? all the models you've mentioned have a curved and round viewfinder box

the elan7 has a signature square shaped box

Are you stupid or trolling?

The 3V also has a ridge under the pentaprism/flash hump, its mode dial on the other side, the shutter button in a slightly different place, and numerous other differences that, while small, are no more significant than the shape of the viewfinder.
>> Anonymous
are you talking about the elan7ne as shown in the picture?

I used one of those for a while, but because it has eye tracking focus, it would freak out on me because I shoot with my left eye.

I suppose if you shoot with your right eye, then it is a good camera, although there is no mode on it that will force flash while in program mode. In other words, if you are using fill flash, and the flash hasn't recycled yet, it will let you keep shooting, but it will act like it doesn't have a flash.

I moved to a Nikon N90s, because it doesn't have the eye focus and in program mode, if I'm using flash the viewfinder on the N90s will tell me if the flash hasn't recycled.

Going to have to disagree with you; the VF housing sticks up, and so is more prominent, and matters more.

I'm>>266931, and I suspect the blocky VF housing on the G1 is just due to the massive size of the EVF screen.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
I've been using one on and off for 3 or so years. If you flip between it and canon's other digital cameras, much is the same in feel and use.

The only issue I have with it is that it's so freaking light. For most people that's a positive. Also if I recall correctly it has an internal IR light sensor to read film and such, which makes it not suitable for film infra-red, but again it's a problem you probably don't care about.

It's because they both have similarly stumpy little flashes.

Pick just about any two SLR or SLR-shaped cameras and you'll see all sorts of similarities in the design. Let's take, for example, the Nikon D50 and the EOS 40D since those are the two I have sitting on my desk right now:

Both have the logo in the same place (although you can't tell as well since it's taped over on my D50)
Both have their mode dial in the same place, at the same slight angle
Both have the lens release button in the same spot
Both have their shutter button at a forward angle
Both have a flash-release button at about the same spot
Both have a little control under the lens release button
Both have the settings LCD in the same spot

Also, the 40D looks like it has a sqaureish, blocky viewfinder hump like the Elan to me...

jesus christ, can you never admit when you are wrong?

what do you know about Canon design history? look it up on MIR and then come back and admit you're wrong like you always do

the introductino of the dslr marked the first redesign of the entry level bodies with the adopted curved angles of the professional film bodies, the entry level film have the trademark rectangular shaped box. if you can't see that, get your eyes checked out

the d30 and up look _nothing_ like the film bodies they replace

and the elan7 looks _nothing_ like a 30d, jesus

Not quite as squareish or blocky.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Well, look at it this way. Most people here don't shoot film. Of those who shoot film, probably half use Nikons. Of those who use film Canons, a small percentage use the Elan/30V. This stupid argument keeps the thread bumped for the very, very few people on here who would have experience with this particular camera in case they want to comment.

All of the 'silent' belt drive canon cameras have this problem. The instruction manuals on the cameras say that they are not suitable for IR film.

Well, take another look at the G1 and the 30V pictures. The G1's is curved up and over, the 30V has more angles. Seriously, open 'em both in tabs and flip back and forth. There are differences there. Not big differences, but that's kinda the point I'm trying to make--the differences aren't much bigger than the differences between any other modern pro-styled camera.

I did, it started. They look a fuck of a lot alike. It's a coincidence, but they do, at least to me and most of the people ITT. You're free to disagree, for obvious reasons.

Other than the viewfinder housing, I can't point to much, the proportions I guess, but it's just the overall subjective effect. Probably because few things have the shape viewfinder housing they do.

Henri Cartier-Bresson used to put black electrical tape over the shiny/reflective/flashy/otherwise attention-grabbing parts of his camera.

Heavyweather apparently did the same with duct tape and the shiny metal Nikon and D50 logos.

I own a silver EOS ELAN IIe.
Damn good camera, it is built like a tank - none of this plastic not-so-fantastic crap.
And it feels good in your hands too!
I also have the BP50 battery pack, it really makes it much easier to hold!

The pop-up flash is noisy (mechanical whine, then a snap as it pops up) and not all that powerful, but just get an old EZ flash and attach it. (Also most modern Canon flashes should work, however they will revert to the older [A-TTL?] flash system.)
Then you have a cheap but powerful camera with most of the features of a D-SLR camera (minus the white balance and other digital only features, of course!) for a damn cheap price.
I would have paid around $110 all up for mine.
$20 for a 300EZ flash.
$20 for the camera (no lens)
$20 for a 35-80mm f4.5-5.6 USM stock lens
$50 for the BP-50 battery pack.

Sorry for the crap image quality, it is straight from my camera, no editing at all......

It's a shame that the silver body color automatically reduces image quality by 15%.

So how do you like the eye-control focusing? I've been really curious to try that out sometime.
>> Anonymous
>>267487
The eye control is pretty good. It means you don't have to go pressing a few more buttons to get the focus selection up and select the required focus point.

HOWEVER this being said, it doesn't always register where your eye is looking at, and it needs to be calibrated to your eye.
Also, there is around a half second delay between you looking at a new focus point, and the camera registering the new focus point.

With todays technology it would be interesting to see an eye control on a modern day SLR camera, and to see how accurate it is with the multiple focus points of the higher end D-SLR cameras.

hey, im actually lookin to get this camera also. but i have done littlere search into the AF feature of it. is this camera strictly AF or is there a manual option?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>267525
All Canon EOS cameras can be manually focused if you so choose.
>> Anonymous
>>267525
To my knowledge, any Canon SLR camera can be manually focused.
On the lens there is an AF/MF switch which switches between Auto focus and Manual focus. Set it to AF and it will auto focus, and set it to MF and you can manually focus the lens.
Some are different, I believe they override the focus when you twist the focus ring, but I have not had much experience with them (they are the more expensive lens types!)
