Yo /p/ my class is almost up and i'm about to lose access to school equipment which means - i need to get my own DSLR to continue to shoot. Here is my question - Is it worth it to go with something cheaper? I've been shooting on 10/20d's and really liked the 20d. Image quality and interface were both great to me, however the price tags hurt a lot. I definitely enjoyed using them both though. However to go with nicer equip i'll have to wait a couple more months to come up with funds. The olympus i could buy releatively soon, within the next couple weeks. so for starting off will the olympus e420 be a nice piece of equipment that will let me start shooting and keep shooting until I know I need more? or am I better off just getting more and learning to use it?

If you like the 20D, get a Rebel XT. It's basically the same. As /p/ believes, bodies don't matter. Focus on the lenses.
>> Anonymous
The Olympus E420 goes for about $550 USD.

That does give you access to the 350D and 400D if you want to stick with Canon.

They don't lose out that much over the 20D. Or you can just buy one used.

im an Olympus fag and i have to say go with the rebel.
not because its better because its probably pretty much the same as the olympus but because if you are already used to the interface its going to be a bitch to get used to a new one.
isnt the 4-420 the new release? doesnt look that comfy to me.
the e-510 has a nice grip and i think is cheaper then the rebel kits so if your thinking about change i guess you could go with that.
try them out see what you think..... etc etc

Yeah the E-510 would be a much better choice than the E-420.
>> Anonymous
go with any canon.

your used to the interface.
and not to mention the rest of it... lenses, sensors, bodies etc...

olympus still has a way to go to be reasonably competitive in the upper ranks and considering your a photog student you should know how fast things move technology wise and so being stuck with a 4/3rds setup in ~5 years will blow.

not to mention 4:3 ratio blows ass picture wise.

3:2+canon all the way :D

E-420 is a camera for chicks and people who just want the smallest DSLR to walk around with. Get Canon if you're used to it, get an E-510 if you want an Olympus.

By the way, switching to a different camera UI isn't as hard as people may lead you to think, as you're not yet a super pro who shoots with his eyes closed.

>>184435
You're an idiot if you think aspect ratio matters that much. Newsflash, you can crop 3:2 to 4:3 and vice versa.
>> Anonymous
400D doesn't have an aperture wheel which is a bitch if you're used to a 20D.

If you've been using a 20D and liked it I'd recommend sticking with it, but I am a bit biased cause I just bought one.

Found mine in excellent condition with a BG-E2 and kit lens for $500. Love it.

>>184538
zomg no shit i can crop them.

but why the fuck would i crop every single image i take >_<
>> Anonymous
>>184550
Because you want either 4:3 or 3:2?
>> Anonymous
One thing you might like about the E-510 is that it has a lot of the options you would find on higher-end Canon bodies. Lots of options. I love mine.

yeah its not as bad is me saying "its going to be a bitch" may make people think
but i used a rebel a while ago and was completely lost.
it should only take like a day or so though especially sense he would be going from cannon to olympus the e-510 is PREEETTY fucking simple youd have to be a retard to not understand it after a couple seconds.

the olympus scale factor in my opinion is MUCH nicer for portraits.
and why would you allow the scale factor of a camera keep you from buying it? youd have to be a fucking retard
>> Anonymous
>>184595
scale factor arent the right words i mean aspect ration lol
>> Anonymous
>>184553
Speaking of options, Olympus removed the focus bracketing in E-510. ARRGHH WHY THE FUCK DID THEY DO THAT
>> Anonymous
Op here, I disregard cocks but suck that.

aperture wheel is hot in my opinion, dont know if I can live without one at this point. How does it work on olympus?
>> Anonymous
>>184697
It doesn't work, only E-3 has the second wheel.

On low-end bodies, aperture is changed by just rotating the primary wheel (in A mode) or simultaneously pushing a button and rotating the wheel (in M mode; you can do it with one hand, but two wheels are more convenient).

I've been looking up prices, new and used over the last couple days and with /p/'s "its the lens not the body" /p/hilosophy. I do a lot of street and low light photography, graffiti, buildings, people, no earlier than dusk. Does this change anything?
>> Anonymous
>>184720
It does. You need fast lenses for low light photography, and while Olympus has some decent fast zooms, there's a distinct lack of primes faster than f/2. So if you shoot primes, olympus is a no-no (unless you're a masochist that likes to shoot with old manual glass at dusk)

I like my E-510, but the viewfinder is a piece of crap. Also holding down a button to change F-stop is pretty lame, but it's doable. I bought one because I didn't need a pro setup, and because it's light enough to carry around most of the time.
>> Anonymous
>>185237
ive learned to love my e-510 i think the controls are pretty nice
never really thought the button for f stop thing though. i guess two wheels would be a big better.

Noise at higher ISOs are shit with 4/3s. :(

There are very few companies out there with any significant number of primes faster than f/2. And no, f/1.8 doesn't count because a quarter o a stop is negligible. Canon has only made three lenses faster than f/2 and Nikon has only made two, and all of them are 50mm.

So Olympus is missing a 50mm f/1.4, that's one stop faster than f/2. One stop is pretty insignificant in my opinion. Unless you're planning on dropping a whole lot of money on Canon's 50mm f/1.2L, you don't have any other options.

My point is that the massive dearth of fast primes you're whining about amounts to one lens and one stop. Doesn't sound like a deal breaker to me.
>> Anonymous
>>185271Canon has only made three lenses faster than f/2

uh, whatever, we'll take out the 1.8s

50mm 1.2
85mm 1.2
50mm 1.4
24mm 1.4
35mm 1.4
50mm 1.0
50mm 0.95
>> Anonymous
>>185293
>>185293

Counting 1.8s

28mm 1.8
50mm 1.8
85mm 1.8
200mm 1.8

fd mount also had the 55mm 1.2
>> Anonymous
>>184819

Actually, 4/3 has a few primes below f2
35mm 1.4
24mm 1.8
30mm 1.4

And the bulk of Olympus' pro lenses are 2.0, 2.8
>> Anonymous
It's a stupid argument. The lenses are there for all the systems.
>> Anonymous
>>185304
>25mm 1.4
Fix'd. Also, the 30/1.4 and 24/1.8 you mentioned are made by Sigma and thus are available for other systems too, so there's a grand total of 1 fast prime unique to 4/3.
>> 4/3 Anonymous
On the other hand, though, 4/3 has fast zooms.
35-100 F2 etc.
And the E-3 is fucking awesome. Prolevel body in therms of how waterproofing etc.
>> Anonymous
>> 35-100 F2 etc.
>> etc.

there's no "etc." that's their one and only f/2.0 zoom. the rest is on par

Because you want wide-angle lenses.

I think he's referring to the image ratio (4:3 vs 3:2), not the crop factor.
