Man, I'm torn between this and the 17-55 f/2.8 IS.

Is 24 wide enough for 1.6 crop?

I mean. I have a Rebel XT. Which needs to be upgraded. Dx

With a 5D, you'd be able to get the full wide angle, but with normal digital SLR's, it's really about like 30-31mm. SO, not really, i was reading up on it, and it was safer to get the 17-55 for the wide angle. But I already have a 14mm f/2.8 , so I really didnt need that. But if you're really worried about wide angle more, and DON'T have a 5D, it's safer to go with the 17-55

24mm on a 1.6 crop is not "really about like 30-31mm". It's the equivalent field of view of 38mm exactly.

Anyways, I use the old version of this lens, the 28-70 f/2.8L on my 20D and I love it. I use it as a portrait lens though, not as a general-purpose.

Excuuuse me. >:(

But, this is going to be my general purpose lens from now on, I mean its not as ide as i'd like, but i have the 14mm, so no big deal. It is an amazing lens, it focuses so fast, even with not so good lighting.

Well, I guess the 17-55 f/2.8 IS it is then.

Shorter reach but IS, FTW.

The 17-55 isn't L glass... the 24-70 is a superior lenses in everything... especially price... but it's worth if you ever want to move up to FF

Just because Canon tags it with L doesn't make it all powerful.

The 17-55 f/2.8 IS is pretty much unrivaled for EF-S users. And FF people simply don't have that kind of focal range at 2.8 and IS to boot.

They're both about the same price as well, give or take 100$. This is why you always see those '17-55 vs. 24-70 vs. 24-105' threads online.

They're all good lenses but don't be a fucktard and dismiss something because it's not L. Sheesh.

17-55 is L-quality, it lacks an "L" designation just because it's an EF-S lens.

Optically there's no complaints, it's the 'L' build quality and weather sealing it lacks.

Which makes sense, since Canon doesn't make a weathersealed camera that'll mount an EF-S lens.

Yup, hard to disagree with that. The only downside is that lens is reputed to have dust-sucking problems. Better build quality and sealing is always welcome.
