So I bought a '78ish Canon A35F today at an antique shop for $12.
The metering uses a KX625 1.35 Volt battery(mercury).
Apparently mercury batteries are basically obsolete.
So my question: What battery can I use to replace the mercury 1.35v battery?
Anybody else had this problem before?

You can buy a casing for the old battery that takes one or two smaller watch batteries, depending on the kind of mercury battery.

They sell the adapter that lets you use silver batteries in cameras designed for mercury. The adapter's like $30, but you only have to buy that once. Afterwards you can just buy the cheap silver cells at your local Radio Shack that last forever.
