what does /p/ think of the Canon Powershot A720 IS?

What is the difference between WC-DC58N, TC-DC58N, 250D, and not using one at all? which is best?

Good consumer compact. Usable for actual photography.

Just taking a guess here:

>WC-DC58N, TC-DC58N,

These are focal length converting lenses. "WC" being wide convertor, "TC" being tele convertor. A wide convertor makes the lens wider, a tele convertor makes it longer, unless they're very good (none of these are) they screw up optical quality and should usually be avoided.

>250D

A close-up lens. These usually are actually usable; I've got a 20+ year old Nikon one I picked up secondhand for free, but I don't really use it much on anything. It just gives the lens a slightly higher magnification, not really useful. You probably won't use it much, either. Point and shoots all have good macro modes, Canons especially.

Forget the guess part. I googled it and was right.

Compared to what? Would a dSLR kit lens have better macro than a point and shoot?

Do I use this just by changing the setting or do I have to have a to use a different lens or adapter?

Also, what kind of attachments, etc can i get for the 720IS?

Assuming you mean taking a macro photo, you just press the "flower" button.

As for accessories, you don't need any.

I don't believe so, no, though I don't have a kit lens so I can't say for certain.

With extension tubes or bellows, any interchangeable lens can be made a macro lens, though.

Don't bother, honestly. It's almost certainly not worth it for 99% of people, in terms of quality loss and cost.

so as noobish as this sounds (i'm really not that much of a noob), what settings can i use to get the most out of this camera?

The ones that are suitable for the situation. Most of the creative zone modes are fairly accurate. I wouldn't swear by them though.

But read the manual and experiment some. Aside from that, there's nothing much I can tell you. That's pretty much photography as a whole.

thanks for the help.

I really love the 720IS.

I have an A520 and use p-mode or shutter priority (manual if I need a unique exposure) exclusively. The scene modes are fairly useless as they just saturate/desaturate and turn the flash on or off. Anything that the scene modes do in terms of color and softness can be done in post processing anyways.
