I am thinking about getting an HP Photosmart M537v digital camera. Does anyone have any good/bad reviews or suggestions instead of it?

HP = cheap shit. You get what you pay for.

rule #1 about cameras
buy one from a company known for making good cameras
example
good :
fuji
canon
olympus
nikkon (not the cheap ones tho)
BAD
kodak (they make film and crap cams)
polaroid (yeah there instant cameras are shit so are the digitals)
hp (pc company)
samsung (electronics company)

Kodak isn't that bad, actually.

If you're just a casual photographer, not into it seriously, just taking pics as a record of cool stuff or whatever... it'll do about the same as similar cameras. It's a horrible camera, but then again, you don't need much for that and the competition is also made up of horrible cameras.

The best thing you could get for that sort of thing, though, would be one of the simpler, cheaper Canon Powershots. Get that.

thats conventional wisdom from ten years ago when you were buying just the camera and not the sensor as well

And what, you think HP has good sensors just because they're an electronics company?

It's a well known fact (and I say this as someone with a mild bias against Canon) that Canon, across its whole line of cameras, has the best sensors. More "electronics" companies- Sony, for instance, and the others supplied by it (Nikon, I think Pentax and Samsung, and pretty much everyone not on the 4/3rds standard for their DSLR models) - just don't match up in that one department. (Oh well.)

So you mean to tell me that he should buy a relatively sucky camera because a computer company- not even a general electronics company, but a computer company- makes it? That their camera sensors must automatically be good because they install chips made by other companies into their computers?
