What kind of equipment do I need for really long range photography? What's the best I can get in the $500 range, and maybe for $1000?

How long is long? What are you shooting? The moon, spots, birds?... Voyeurism?

Can I just attach a camera to a regular telescope?

$5000 for the lens you would need. Not counting the cost of a tripod.

At the range you're talking about, you need a goddamn telescope, literally. Get a 10" reflector and a T-Mount. Cheap as fuck.
