Any advice to reduce noise with the Powershot S5 IS?
>> Anonymous
Don't shoot in ISO400 or above. If you can't manage that, then don't take the picture.

Lower your ISO. Get some noise-reduction software (I use something called GREYCstoration for GIMP. Noise Ninja is a good one for Photoshop).

So don't shoot in auto ISO anymore and try to stick with say, 100 for indoor and outdoor?

I usually use the noise reduction in PSP myself.

ISO does need to go lower, but to compensate:

Consider using the flash to assist low light shots.

Also, tripods and longer exposures... The S5, for all its bulk, is quite a light camera and can be mounted on a miniscule cheap tripod to greatly improve longer shots.

The 'night snapshot' mode on the dial is actually quite good at low light (yes, it's an auto mode) and may deserve a look in.

Unfortunately, a little noise is often inevitable, due to such a featured camera having such a tiny sensor... Try turning down the size of your photos, it may reduce visible noise... the 'medium' size on the S5 is still extremely printable.

Here's one I prepared earlier

Use the lowest ISO possible. I've never touched an S5, used to have an S3 and ISO 800 was fine (barely) on it. Learn to handhold, use motion blur and noise creatively- look up Robert Frank's work for this- or at least manage them. Don't worry about correct exposure per se- since the S5IS does only JPEGs (unless you get CHDK) just expose for how you want it, even if that means half the picture is black, this can actually be quite effective. EVFs are great for this because you can see the effect in advance.

CHDK? Is that like the firmware hack for the digic chip to get the advanced features out? Has that been perfected for the S5 yet, last time I checked it was S3 or a620 at the latest

Put it over your ear. You will, however, need two units for biaural reduction. And I don't think you can get this great reduction levels with Canon and their sloppy designs. I'd rather recommend that Nikon's touchscreen Coolpix - it's small and stylish (I think they learned a thing or two from Sennheiser), and the huge flat surface allows for suction action when applied correctly, this providing superior noise reduction. Hope this helps.
