I'm shooting my first live band tonight, /p/. Never done this before, any tips? I don't know what lighting will be like or pretty much anything yet.

Spot meter, try to cut out the distracting backgrounds with nice, tight compositions, and get the moments. If you're in a good position, try some neat layering. Don't forget to shoot the crowd, too. You can get some really amazing stuff, especially if there's a lot of light spill, or if they're using strobes on the stage or those big hot lights in sync with the claps, etc.

I just shot The Roots last night, so the experience is still really fresh.

lolno

not that the band playing would really care that much, they're drunk country assholes. I'm just taking the opportunity to work on my portfolio off of them.

my metering options are only evaluative, partial, and center-weighted. I'd assume partial would be best?

oh, canonfag... I have no idea. Well, expose for the highlights, that's all.

Yessir, I'm a Canonfag. Partial will probably work out okay, it's similar to spot but meters a larger area. 10-15%, I think.

hos do you expose for the highlights?
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA

I just mean expose for the brightest thing in the scene (excepting things like direct light sources, which are supposed to blow out.)

Lurk more /p/.

Some tips. Shoot RAW. RAW is your super best friend.
Learn to post process. In low light that's really your only way to get any superb photos.
If you have to, just underexposure. Underexposured, but a sharp photo is much better than goodly ligthed photo with massive amounts of motion blur.
I use mostly M or Av.
Auto exposure is a bit tricky on gigs. If there's only black background, and you want the artist to lit properly, you have to "underexposure" one or two steps. But, if there's lot of smoke which shatters the light, then you might have to overexposure.
Metering is not that hard. Just take some shots, look how they come out, tweak exposure.

Oh yeah, OP, read the /p/'s rules. Post only photos you have taken.

Kinda hard to post a related picture when I've never shot a show, don't ya think? Sorry to offend you so by posting it.

I usually shoot manual, I'll probably stick to aperture priority tonight to get the feel of it. I'll be there from 5:30 until 10:00 tonight, and it's outdoors, so I'm sure I will get some perfectly fine shots from 5:30 until about 7:00 when it starts to get dark.

Yeah, well, you could have posted something. Or at least say who took that photo (Jari Kaariainen).

Here's a relevant photo to your interest. This was originally underexposured two and half steps.
