Ron Paul /p/. Someone has the bright idea of assigning me to be the official photographer of a fashion show, knowing well about my lack of equipment.

After today's rehearsal, I think I'll stick to ISO 400, f/2.2, 1/60 on my 50mm/1.8 II. Sounds good?

Also, tips for surviving an indoor event without depending on internal flash.

Countdown to event: 14 hours 22 minutes.

50mm sounds edgy. I'd say take a 80-200mm.

Then, what lenses do you have?

Moar hot asian girls plz.

And yeah, sounds like you know what you're doing. Don't be afraid of f/2.0 and f/1.8--the 50/1.8 is plenty sharp and you should be at enough distance that the lack of DoF won't be too much of a hindrance.

The only other advice I could give involves getting more gear, which would take more than 14 hours and 22 minutes or more than the amount of money you're likely to have available to you.

GET THE FUCK OFF AUTO WHITE BALANCE FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

Get a gray card and go under the exact lights that will be on when you're shooting the show and get a white balance measurement otherwise you will be stuck forever trying to get skin tones right.

Or, alternately, shoot RAW and don't worry about it.

He still needs to know the temperature of the lights. He should bring a gray card and shoot it in the light of the show and use that to get the temperature to use for the RAW conversions.

I wouldn't be afraid of bumping the ISO unless they want you making absolutely giant prints. 800 ought to be fine, and you could probably get away with 1600 most of the time.

Don't be afraid to use motion blur creatively, though. Stick that thing on a tripod and drop your shutter speed a bit, catch the model spinning her body around while keeping she keeps her face towards the audience. Nothing crazy looking, but just to have a sense of motion going on. Something like that.

Also, Ron Paul is made of fail. The most that can be said of him is that he's honest, which doesn't say much about most of the other people running.

God-awful kit lens
55-200mm f/4.5-5.6
50mm f/1.8 II
75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 III

Tried to borrow a 580EX, but some arsehole decided to not borrow it to me at the last minute.

The light won't be constant though, it would be a mixture of red, blue and everything else that those in charge of lighting think is appropriate for a fashion show (but the bane of us photographers). I'll go with ac's advice.

>>117172
Will keep that in mind.

In that case then shooting RAW and going with a nice round 5000k should be fine.

>>117283
And are the lights in the samples as it will be for real? You might just get away with the 55-200mm..

You're doing just fine now with the gear you have. Any improvements would involve more lighting equipment, like getting that 580EX or planning the event lighting to not give you so much trouble. Or you could upgrade your lenses. As neither are going to happen, all I can do is say nice work so far and good luck.

I'll get back to you guys in 24 hours. Too tired, been sick for the past two days (hey, a photographer gotta do what a photographer gotta do) and work.

One of my main tips for shooting shows is Don't try and get every model in a longshot!

My first show was ALL about the longshots and the pictures were dead boring. Don't be afraid to get a little closer, get down a bit and tilt your cam over to one side about 45* (so that their head is in the corner).

Be creative with your shot framing rather than being happy with "blah blah square frame blah blah".

Being closer also helps you get cheeky looks and smiles off the models, which is v important if you want pics with life in them.

Hope my tip helps :)

Same poster, but I forgot to mention my other tip, use a zoom lens! I re-frame shots so often during shows that I think a prime would make my head explode.

Do yourself a favour and keep the prime for times when versatility isn't the name of the game.

Sup /p/. Being sick the day before, during and after the show ain't helping one bit.

NOBODY mentioned to me that there's gonna be a huge spotlight in the rear - it wasn't there during the rehearsal. I would've brought and used my 55-200mm if that was the case!
