Back from today's model shoot, Still working on the pictures, However I think I did alright, Its difficult getting pictures that look natural. Not sure how much of that is my inexperience or hers lol. Probably a combination of both! Next time a little more thought into clothing and themes (Posing was tedious for well posed shots, so next time Its going to focus on actions)

Took the D50, D70(IR) and D200. Didn't use the reflector at all, though used the Sb-800 for fill a lot. 30mm f1.4(IR only), 50mm f1.4, and 85mm f1.8 = primary lenses, Also used the 10-20mm a bit + the 18-70 af-s. Though the 10-20mm is hit or miss for distorting faces (even in the center of the frame....)

Heres a bit of a teaser, will post more as I edit them.

so far its meh, smile seems forced and arms are awkward
>> Anonymous
eww, she's fat and the shadows under her breasts look meh. and her posture/facial expressions just screams "I hope I'm doing this right".
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
sorry.. but ..
do not like at all
there's nothing interesting going on in this shot
model is not photogenic at all either, and her makeup job is caked on too heavily

i'll cut you some slack though since you have very little experience shooting people

but yea.. post the rest so it's easier to criticize
>> Anonymous
her eyes are creepy looking.

and they clash with the purple shirt...
>> OiD
Pic looks a bit flat. Someone balancing doesn't look too natural unless they are good at balancing me thinks. Hoping to see the others.
Pardon my grammers, 3 days with 12 hours sleep

Nice model BTW

I've got lots, lots of different style shots too. This first one I posted = one of the few I didn't take in RAW. Aka it was easy to edit.

IR was interesting, my lens AF was a tad sketchy, but it seemed to almost be tilting (flat focal planes not sharing the same sharpness) Was difficult to get a sharp face!

Heres one converted to B+W

Aw, what? You cut off fer left foot?!

Also, the pose is a little awkward. And I agree about the top, too contrasting. But you'll learn for next time. Spend a little more time setting up your shots. It seems like you could of had a different angle on the second one, the bar just slahses the model in half.

Heres a weird one, composition is a bit strange, however I don't mind it.

infrared erases skin blemishes and makes the model glow, at least in black and white. color ir is a bad idea, since you can see the model's veins through their skin.

Fuck I just realized all these are saved with Adobe RGB color profile... Goddamn it. Didn't realize RAW defaulted to that...

Not bad. First one needs some cropping.>>170770
Is the best shot IMO. Really tryt o focus in on her. Right now in the wider angle shots she's overpowered by her surroundings. Don't be afraid to crop in.

10mm is a challenging focal length for portraits - and this one didn't work out. The composition's not bad, but her gigantic legs look very disconcerting.

you're right about that one being weird. she looks really ugly there.

Also in general the facial expressions don't seem natural. Too much of a photo smile.

Ok cool, thanks for the advice. It was fun getting out for the first time, next time I will be a little more prepared, / know what works and what doesn't. And if I use her again she won't be so nervous lol!

Thanks again Liska! I used your advice to shoot from a lower angle for 90% of these shots. Among a lot of other Don'ts.

everyone has their own style of shooting. All i can say is what works for me :) Best of luck on your next one. I'd recommend getting onto model mayhem (if the model is OK with you using her picturse to get on there)- modelmayhem.com - get a profile, then work trade with some more slightly experienced models in your area to get some practice. It makes a huge huge difference.
