I want to have another go at this because it took a fuckload of postprocessing to make it look like this and it still doesnt look great, what do you recommend, /p/?

I dont have a tripod right now unfortunately. Would using the in-built flash on the 350D just look crap, although it'd allow me to get a sharper picture due to quicker shutter speed?

if you don't have a tripod, make one. fill a tube sock with rice, use it as a support on foreign surfaces.

get a 1/4" x 20 thread count bolt with an eye on the end. thread bolt into tripod mount, tie 6 foot rope to the eye. step on end of rope.
