ITT: Spontaneous and impromptu portraiture.

How does /p/ get strangers to submit to having their picture taken without getting yelled at, beaten, or shot?

Also post ones you've taken if you have 'em.

This isn't mine. I wish it was. I can't get people to let me.
>> Anonymous
I imagine pointing an expensive-looking camera at someone helps.
>> Anonymous
I do it all the time. Its not really hard, and it's not much different than normal portraiture, as long is you think that normal portraiture involves "models" and "lighting".

I just tell them why I'm taking the picture, and then I take the damn picture. What's so hard about that? Just tell them truthfully why you're drawn to them.

If you're not used to lying, it shows. Don't be a pussy.
>> Anonymous
>>297097
That honestly never occurred to me.
Don't know why.

I guess my problem was I was asking, not telling.

I typically carry my cards with my at all times (especially when out taking pictures) so Ill just take the picture, but if they seem bothered or they change what they're doing Ill give them my card and explain I just want them to act as if I am not there.

Even before I was able to get my cards I just wrote down my flickr page, I find people like pictures a lot more if they can see it after and then show their friends.

I was thinking I should hand cards out too.

Too bad there's no standard uniform for photographers anymore.

I just take their photo without asking. Most of the time, they don't bother- but when they do, I tell them it's what I do and that people interest me. I also carry with me some samples of my work just in case they ask what kind of photographer I am- but I've never had to chance to do that as people (at least in my place) are usually cool with having their photo taken.

I don't usually get too bogged down in a conversation where I have to prove my credentials (read: never). The subject usually just wants to know if your intentions are pure, and then you are not a pornographer(i've had this happen three times; why?)

I usually as, because then I get them looking at me. I don't do "street photography" I do "street portraiture", which had different implications. I need permission, intent, and attention. The best portraits I've seen are where the model works in tandem with the photographer. If I can't get that from a stranger, then there's no point.

Pic unrelated. That's what I think street photography is.

Long focal length to start is a good suggestion, I haven't really done much but when I do it's usually in passing so it's all over in the click of the shutter, I haven't had anyone turn around and say anything to me, though I don't do it often.

Carry cards/release forms and just take their photo. If they give: O shit boy you're in for it look, hand them a card or release form and tell them how you are and why you take pictures. This usually puts off the people who would give you trouble. The book Professional Business Practices in Photography has a good legal form as well as being a decent reference, though it might be out of date with all the crap they've been passing this year.

Shooting with a look of confidence will also put most people off from bothering you as well. If you look like you think should be shooting people, people will leave you alone.

Also long lenses and well timed shooting prevents most people from noticing.

This way works pretty well. Take a friend with you and do as if you're taking pictures of your friend, but pass over said friend's shoulder or something and snap pics of people without them knowing. It makes great looking shots, very natural.

go out at night around college-age kids. they'll think you work for a magazine or somehting, they will pose for days if you want em to. Its freaking weird.

as always: don't act pervy, and don't act like you're doing anything wrong. The more ashamed you are, the more people think that you have some sort of ulterior motive.

I've been walking around with my camera out and taking impromptu pictures of people and things on the street for a few months now - nothing really good except for an electrical pole on fire, just getting experience taking photos and learning to ignore people who take a possibly contradictory attitude to the camera.

One of the first things I did when I bought my first digital camera was to look up the laws regarding photography in Australia. When you know you can legally photograph anything you can see while standing in a public place, and you DON'T have to delete anything taken from a private location, although ceasing to take pictures is a given when asked, it really helps your confidence.

Of course asking people first is just good manners, but it's not always necessary, nor legally required. Just be ready to run if you happen to piss someone off who could kick your arse.
