Though I have to disagree about only going for atypical stuff if you have to shoot a concert slow. I've done it with a point and shoot (ISO 400 max, sometimes 800 if I really had to, f/2.8 being wide open) and it takes a fuckload of effort and good technique (timing and handholding), but it can be done. If one can set a tripod up (out of people's way, of course), that helps for longer stuff, but I didn't find it needed (with optical stabilization in the lens, granted) for wide, normal, and mid-tele.
Why I was shooting a concert with a point and shoot is a whole other story, but let's not go there.
