My understanding is that the Alpha700 and the D300/D90 all have the save sensor - but Sony's is way noisier. So the D3X with the Alpha900 sensor could be significantly less noisy.

Unfortunately, my understanding is also that Sony has now changed their minds and is saying that no one else will ever be allowed to use their 24MP sensor. Sony exclusive...

in the A700 v4 firmware sony made it an option to disable the 'hardware' noise reduction. i've seen clean iso 3200 from the a700.

The Exmor in the a700 isn't the same sensor as the one in the D300.

The sensor in the D90 isn't the same sensor as the one in the D300.

sony is fucking stupid making a "pro" dslr that gets horrifically noisy after 400.

Noise isn't just a function of the sensor, Nikon's data pipeline is more efficient and they have cleaner amps and processing.
