/p/, I'm starting to get seriously in photography, but lack a good camera.

I'm interested in taking potrait photos of people. What (in your opinion) is the best camera/lens/flashes for the job?

I'm a bit of a n00b to photography so bare with me, I'm trying to learn.

A hasselblad with a digital back should suit your needs perfectly.

is one possibility. Other good ones would be a Leica M8 with the 75/2 Summicron, or a view camera with a Rodenstock lens.

Seriously, though, what's your price range? And what sort of portraits? Candid, posed environmental, posed studio, what?

digital rebel xti or nikon D40 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens

D40 + 50/1.8 would be a bad combo, since the Nikon 50/1.8 won't autofocus on a D40

I've found that shooting with lenses with faster maximum apertures makes it easier, not harder, to get the focus right. As soon as you're even slightly off, you know it, because unless you're holding down the DoF preview button, you're looking at it as it would show up if you shot at f/1.whatever.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>94779
Your kit lens has an f/3.5 maximum aperture. I'm sure Liska has a 50/1.8--borrow it and see how well you do focusing manually at f/1.8 with a focusing screen that's only accurate down to f/2.5.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>94785
How is not accurate below f2.5? Seriously, I'm curious, this isn't something I've heard of. Is it due to size or brightness?
And she doesn't have one.

both size and brightness. with my D80, which has a better viewfinder, looking through my 50mm f/1.4, it is quite hard to tell when focus is good or not. a lot of times it looks good, but even moving the focusing ring a little, it still looks good.

Ah. Fair enough.

hasselblad h3d is the best

The Canon Digital rebel xt with the efs 18-55 mm camera is the one i use and it is pretty good

I'm actually not sure, but that's what Ken Rockwell tells me, and my personal tests confirm it (i.e., when I hold down the DoF preview on my Rebel and flick the aperture dial, there's a noticeable change from f/36 up to f/2.5, but no further. And I can't manually focus my 50/1.8 worth a damn at anything less than f/2.5.)

You can't really test it that way with your D40 since it doesn't have a DoF preview, but you can borrow a 50/1.8 and actually try it out. I'll happily stop talkin' trash if you can prove me wrong. :)

what's wrong with ken rockwell? his personal aesthetic is questionable and his opinions on gear change every 3 months, but his straight up facts are always spot-on.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>94829

What? The guy reviews gear that he's never even touched... how is that factual?

But the main problem is that what he takes out of those facts, alot of beginners wouldn't know how to differentiate between his crapo opinion and actual facts.

I was one of those beginners who didn't know better... now the more i read.... "VR and HIGH ISO kills the tripod"... etc etc... crap like that...

The worst is that he DOES change his opinion all the time... which just shows he really doesn't know as much as he let on. And have you seen his photos? They're not great. Which is probably why he's not actually a professional photographer.

DoF preview isnt suddently the dog's balls, its just a way to see how large your aperture can be before you stop seeing a difference in what might be in focus and what isnt
>> Anonymous
>>94834
You could have all of this for $1000 a day.
>> Anonymous
DoF preview isn't NECESSARY - you can always estimate or calculate it on your own, but it's inexcusable nowadays for a SLR not to have a DoF preview button.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>94825
I forget, are you that guy who's always trolling me? I didn't express any value judgement with regards to DoF preview. I just noted that the D40 doesn't have it, so he can't do that particular test.

we've been over this before. with digital cameras, it takes just as little time to just take the photo (and then delete it) as it does to click the dof preview button.

it's a smart design compromise, especially on a camera that no serious photographer would consider his primary one.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>94856

Beside the fact that I've got better things to do, you're really not important enough to troll.

>>94836

Huh? is that how much he makes a day off that website? damn he's intelligent then... he did start off as a white collar financier or something...

>>94841

hehe, you see the contradictory nature of that comment right? Why is it inexcusable if it's unnecessary?

The main reason why i rarely bother with the DoF on my D70s is the viewdfinder really isn't big enough to check it properly. Besides Once you get used to the main stops you can pretty much intuitively guess what f stop you need.

no it doesn't

being able to see the difference and adjust while looking through the viewfinder is a big plus. Its like focusing while looking through the viewfinder, except for multiple targets.
