Dear, /p/.
I'm thinking of getting a new dslr. but not sure what i should get, i was thinking of nikon d80 but im not sure... any suggestions?
>> Anonymous
if its your first, get the canon 400d, but if you're serious (and have big hands) take the d80.

i bought the 400d, its ok for a first time camera, the lens are the important thing anyway and are a lot pricier than the bodies.
>> Anonymous
Oh yeah, the 400d is actually the digital rebel thingy in the us
>> Anonymous
Lenses are more important then bodies. You can pick up the d80, and it'll still be relevant for a good few years. Especially if you keep it with a nice lens. If you have enough money get the body alone, and pick up a nice lens.

I'd say lay off the 400D. Canon just released the 450D, pretty much the same thing but 12million pixel resolution instead of the 400D's 10million, and the rest of it's been refined that bit more too (sensor records less noise at higher ISOs, the LCD display is a little bigger, power consumption is a bit better, etc). Of course the 450D costs more than the 400D, but I think it'll be worth the difference. When you're starting out, it's better to spend more at first, rather than buy cheaper things now and then have to upgrade quicker.

Also, always get a battery grip with the 400D/450D. The body really needs it unless your hands are absolutely tiny, and the extra power does some in very handy on these cameras, as they're not the most efficient and can get through one battery in just an hour or so shooting.

No idea what the 450D is called in America. I know the 400D was the Digital Rebel XTi, sod knows what the 450D got renamed over there.
Can't comment on the Nikon I'm afraid, I'm a Canon guy. From what I hear, the various Nikon equivalents at this lower range are a tiny bit better quality, but will typically cost you a little bit more. And I know here int he UK at least, most places put higher prices on Nikon lenses than on Canon equivalents, so that's something to take into account.

Uh, so are you saying for people who are serious about photography, they shouldn't even consider purchasing the Canon 400D?

The Canon 450D is also known as the Canon XSi

Well, first off, you missed the thing that I find most appealing about the XSi/450D--larger viewfinder. Slightly better high-ISO performance is number two. I wouldn't even warrant the extra pixels a spot on the list.

Secondly, there's not enough of a difference between the XTi and XSi that getting the older camera means you'll need to upgrade quicker. It has a few things that are nice to have, but there aren't any real dealbreakers that make the XTi unacceptable vs. the XSi.

Third... he's asking about Nikons, so why the hell are we even discussing Canon?

>they're not the most efficient and can get through one battery in just an hour or so shooting.
This makes me suspect you're trolling. Modern SLRs will give you many, many hours of steady shooting on one charge. I filled a 4gig card with pictures of a friend of mine the other day, with a battery that I hadn't charged in a week (though a week of light use, granted) and only had to switch once during the session. Then that charge lasted me another week after the photoshoot was over.

>>153626This makes me suspect you're trolling.

or he's just retarded

just about every camera gives you at least 500-700 shots (no flash)

you'd have to be shooting pretty hard to drain a full battery in one hour

>>153634

Around 1 shot every 6-7 seconds. That's finger suicide.

Battery grips are useful when you are shooting for a whole day (5-8 hours of work, mostly events). As for me, candid shoots normally take like 150 shots an hour at the most.

I charge my d80's battery once a week, twice at the most, if that helps.

D80 owns, I can tell you that...

The D80 is a fantastic machine.
Add a grip and take 1200 shots between charges.
I retired ALL of my Canons after I got mine.

Shitting shit about photo is illogical.

I got tired of needing back-ups for Canons, so I got a D80 and never looked back. It's not a pro camera, but it takes pro quality shots.

I have a D300, but never use it. The 80 is all I need.

There's this wonderful invention called a TRIPOD!
Look it up ass-munch.
And yes, some of us CAN shoot at 1/6 without fagging up our camera with VR. If you can shoot a tight group at 100 yards, then that is no problem. But then again, you don't need to be good, you want the technology to be what you aren't.... skilled. Enjoy your ass full of fail.
