back to the old house Anonymous
"I would love to go back to the old house. But I never will." -the Smiths

The house I grew up in - from my earliest memory to when I finally moved away from college - was sold not long ago. The person who bought it from my parents was looking to make a tidy profit on it and started renovating it and renting it out.
Unfortunately, the last people to rent couldn't pay, and they decided the best course of action would be to totally trash the place on their way out.
The people who owned the house couldn't afford to fix everything. They may have started remodeling afterwards, but simply ran out of money. Whatever the case, they abandoned the house.

I was very attached to this house. My whole childhood was spent there, my teenage years as well. There were a lot of memories and I'm rather sentimental about the old house.

Going back to this place, like a decrepit, haunted house on an old street, was a very strange experience.

I know these pictures aren't particularly professional or well-taken, but I thought the subject matter might be of some interest.
I figured I'd share.

There's probably some great metaphor for childhood's end in here, or the way our memories of the past become the ruins of today, or how you can't go home again, or how time turns all to ash.
But I'm not very eloquent.

The entire 15 or so years I lived here, my mom was always trying to grow roses here.

The pool was drained, save for a squalid puddle filled with mosquito eggs.

Weeds grew in great numbers through the cement, and through the backyard firepit (not pictured).

The acorn tree we'd planted the day we first moved in was dead.

The garden. We planned to have plants growing over it, but the plants had other plans.

This is the firepit. When I was little, we'd have s'mores here.

The old gazebo frame had been moved up beside the house, creating an odd sort of thoroughfare.

the perspective sucks in all of these and makes them boring as hell.. try squatting, try getting really close to stuff..

try composing with some layers: interesting things in the foreground and the background

Took me a long time to recognize this room, and I realized why: the blank wall there, between the dial switch and the draped window, used to have a door in it. It led from the dining room, where this was taken, to the family room beyond. Now the only way there is through the backyard, as before, or a new door in what used to be my little brother's room.

Love this one. The composition is marvelous, and the bite in the colors really make the subject stand out. It evokes the feelings of a drained pool. I rate this picture an A+.

The new door from my brother's room to the family room. I don't know what the square hole in the wall was for.

A hole was punched in the ceiling and the wood paneling which made the family room feel cozy was ripped out completely. The fireplace stood alone, the only recognizable thing in the entire room.

Actually, I was amazed there was electricity.
The house was more recently abandoned than we'd realized.

This is my room and my little brother's room. There was a wall separating the two once, but now it was a single large room. The blanket in the corner seemed to have been used recently - more recently than the rest of the things in the house.

...which of course left the room with two doors right next to each other, and one leading into the family room.

This room belonged to my older brother (pictured), and now has an empty doorway leading straight into the garage, of all places.

There was a couch.

These are really boring. They're all eye level. It feels like you just walked around with the camera to your face and clicked whenever you walked into a room or looked at something.

Front door leads to the backyard, door on the right leads to my brother's old room.
Someone took out their anger on the house here.

Sorry. My mind wasn't in a very artistic place at the time.
I was hoping the content would make up for my amateur skills.

I guess I'll just post the more unique ones.

Hoping for this thread, I mean.
I didn't take these pictures with the intent of starting the thread or anything. It was mostly documentary I guess.
Sorry it's not more interesting.

Why would anyone abandon a house? Seriously.... auction it off to a hobo or something, but get money for it at least. And why would a landlord let people trash the place and leave? Don't they have laws and courts and police where you grew up? blah blah blah. sage for photography not being the point.
