soup /p/

My friend gave me a list of dSLR's asking which one was best, and because I'm such a good friend (read: I'm gonna borrow his cam and use it more than he ever will. I'm using an uncle's 40D, god.) I'd like to know which one would be... most acceptable.

-Nikon D40
-Canon 400D

-Sony Alpha A700 (my choice; Y/N?)
-Canon EOS 40D
-Nikon D200
-Olympus something E-3? Not sure

Thanks, mates.

Why the hell do you have ones like the Nikon D40 on the same list as the Nikon D200? They're not in the same class.

If you can, get the D200.

>>-Nikon D40
No. Simply no.

>>-Canon 400D
Ok.

>>-Sony Alpha A700 (my choice; Y/N?)
Nope.

>>-Canon EOS 40D
Good.

>>-Nikon D200
Best!

>>-Olympus something E-3? Not sure
Debatable.

He said, "first 2 are more along the lines of "get cheap-ass camera and good lenses""

This place has a somewhat skewed view on the sonys, I have no idea how the A700 performs against the others but its a decent camera.
>> Anonymous
The A700 isn't awful, but it's out of it's league compared to the D200.

Looks about equal to the D300, which should be better than the D200 no?
>> Anonymous
Superiority of the D300 is well documented.

I'll let him see that, thanks.

>>105826

ok now I'm confused... so it's a good choice?

Limited range of new glass compared to Nikon, older minolta glass that works fine is cheaper than Nikons because of a slightly lower demand (a lot of minolta film guys switched to canikon digital) the number of accessories (flashes basicaly) is slightly smaller.

If you liked minolta before the sony is one, other than that its fairly equal. The number of alternative bodies/upgrade paths is limited currently compared to nikon too (ie no full frame/top pro level)

There's no reason to buy into Sony when you can buy into Nikon or Canon.
>> Anonymous
Get either the D200 or D40

Heh, don't let Butterfly hear you saying those things about... wait, what?

hah yeah :P

so how about them canons?

The prevailing opinion is that the ergonomics aren't as good as Nikon, and the Nikon D3 apparently whups up on Canon's 1Ds and 5D in terms of high-ISO image quality.

Ok where are our resident nikonfags? Isnt Jeremo one?

>Nikon D40
>Canon 400D
Depends on how much money he has. A cheap body + a good fast lens is better than a more expensive body + a shitty kit lens.

-Sony Alpha A700 (my choice; Y/N?)
-Canon EOS 40D
-Nikon D200
These are very close in terms of both functions and image quality. Sony has a better screen and in-body image stabilization, Canon has live view, D200 is weatherproof.
I'd probably recommend Canon, as A700 annoys me with noise reduction that you can't turn off, and D200 is a bit noisier than others.

-Olympus something E-3? Not sure
E-3 is a pro camera intended for shooting in harsh environments. It's more functional and more rugged, but also more expensive than all of the above. I'm not sure if he needs that.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
Let's face it folks. If he's asking us this then chances are it really doesn't matter. Go with any budget DSLR camera and get some good glass to go with it with whatever money is left. Get whatever camera feels comfortable and has menus you like. It won't make much difference to you or him.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>105847
A700 is weathersealed, not seen any field tests on just how much it is, but it is.
>> else !L6xabslN96
>>105850
the thing that iv figured is that lenses usually cost more than the budget camera itself. and make a bigger difference.

K10D

how did this not make the list?
>> Anonymous
D80 or K10D. XT/XTi/D40 feel more like souped-up "prosumer"/crossover P&S. 30D/40D are great, but probably out of the budget of your friend.

i have a sony alpha and i loves it

K10D has no lenses Pentax is a shitty system
>> Anonymous
>>107187
There are probably more K-mount lenses manufactured throughout the years than exist for all other lens mounts combined, and every last one of them works just fine on all of Pentax's DSLRs.

They're not new so they don't exist. Sorry.

Olympus E-510. Easily the best Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera out there, unless you're willing to spend enormous amounts of money.

I can't speak for the A-700, but the A-100 has the second worst ergonomics i have ever seen in a DSLR (the Canon 400D = the worst)
I never understood the point of having the wheel selector Right Next to the shutter. Canon just takes it one step further by having half of its quick selection buttons right on top there too.

Guy at the Sony store told me the A-700 wouldn't meter with Manual focus Minolta lenses, so that seems a bit problematic for finding used gear. (Compared to the D200 or D300 which both can)

Tell him to buy a D3
