Hey dudes. I've gotten into photos as of late. I've been using a point 'n shoot Lumix (DMC-TZ3) which is great for its price range, but I want to upgrade to something a bit fancier, like an midrange DSLR. I'm looking at a Canon EOS-40D with a cheap standard zoom.
But I'm a newbie to all this still so recommendations or anecdotes or whatever would be great.
Pic is one of mine.

For enthusiasts (amateurs) camera brands are religious; arguments become holy wars. The dirty secret: THE BEST CAMERA+LENS ARE THOSE THAT LET YOU MAKE THE PICTURES YOU WANT. How any brand or model is marketed is irrelevant. I love my Pentax K20D (15mpx) dSLR and the 80+ lenses I have to mount on it, but some of my best images come from my old Sony DSC-V1 (5mpx) PNS with IR and B&W filters and full manual control. I use various old PNS digicams; any image source just provides raw material for digital manipulation.

So, whatchoo wanna do with cameras? Band posters, pr0n, landscapes, forensics, weddings, flowers, wars, abstracts, fuzzy animals, microcrystals? And what's yer budget? And yer patience? Fotografy is not for wussies.

Nikon is better, I'd recommend a D80 on up, 80's can be picked up pretty cheap with a whole kit of stuff, or just get the D90. The higher the better, the current best of the compact body DSLR is the D700 right now.

OP, do yourself a huge favor if you want to get a midrange DSLR. Get a used one. If you're looking at the 40D, step down to a gently used 30D, or even a 20D. I really wanted a 40D, but just ended up buying a 20D, which looks practically brand new. I also got the standard 18-50mm(sigma) lens and a sigma 50-200mm, a 2gb card and some other stuff for less than 650$.
Go to a local camera shop and look at stuff. Ask to see what they have and make sure you like the camera you're considering getting. Look at other brands, too, like Nikon and Pentax, maybe even Sony.

Just make sure you get something you like and that you won't regret getting in 6 months.
