It's good when you need to capture something that only happens for a fleeting moment and you just don't have the chance to craft the perfect exposure. Some of my best photos were taken in auto. What auto fails to do can often be fixed in photoshop. If the subject is awesome, the auto mode is mediocre, and the shopping is excellent, you'll get an amazing photo.
