Soup /p/?

So what's your favorite place to take pictures?

Personally, I love urban exploration which is going into abandoned buildings to take pics.

Pic related: I took it at this abandoned chemical plant I went to.

i've got two projects going right now. one is a total rip off of bernd and hilla becher. it's an objective study of the suburbs. the other one is the unnatural light patterns that happen around big buildings in an urban environment.

so, right now it's suburbs and downtown albuquerque.

My plan would have worked if it weren't for those meddling kids.....

there is just something poetic about their work (the bechers) that i dig. the suburbs would be a wonderful place to find that same poetry.

also, as much fun as exploring old places can be, am i the only one who thinks that is really played out in photography? i mean, it kind of seems like eveyone just likes saying "i'm going shooting in this or that dangerous abandoned place" for the awesome points. no offence ment. unless you suck.

how do you get it, I wanna have a go at something like this. interesting.

also what time of day is best in terms of lighting? do I need a good flash (i have a average flash gun for my film, but mounts onto my eos 5d).

OP here. I mean I do know people that really think they're bad ass just going into these buildings and such but to me it's more interesting to like uncover the history of the building just by looking around at the remains.

I dunno. Though, most photographers i've spoken to heard of it but have never really done it.

As for going into abandoned buildings, going at a certain time of day, that's up to you really. Whenever it's a good time to sneak in without anyone seeing you. In terms of going in during a certain lighting, that depends on what building you're going into. Larger buildings get much darker faster than smaller buildings during the day. 12 PM is around the perfect time you want to go in.

Bring a tripod, prepare for exposures equal to that of night time exposures if you're going late afternoon. Personally I'd use natural light sources for abandoned buildings vs. flash. As that's what is supposed to be the key points of photographing abandoned buildings.

thats good advice, thx. what about using a flash sock? will that give good results? also its a pity that there are many multi-floor abandoned buildings in adelaide, and even if there were they would be some shity townhouses/units with carpets and everything just minus furniture.

is trespassing a serious charge?

To be honest, i've been caught about three times and each time, they've let me off with a warning. If they see you with a tripod and a camera, they basically yell at you and slap your wrist. But if they do actually arrest you (which they really won't if you have a camera as I said) it's really nothing to be worried about.

If the camera thing doesn't give them the hint to fuck off, constantly tell them it's for a school project. Depends on your age though if that one will work.

As for a flash sock. I'm not sure. I've honestly never tried it. I'm sure it'd work fine for getting a dimly lit shot.

Try it. Post the shots here when you do. I'll be interested to see how they come out.

Just to contradict (and provide a different point of speculation) I was issued a five hundred dollar or 90 jail day citation just for being on grounds, I was professionally attired and cooperated with the police. Only after mentioning that this was in fact a school project did they let me know I could have arranged a monitored viewing after contacting local police, and that after appealing in court, they will usually drop the sentence to community service in this case.

I would have to say I believe this is all because I decided to frequent a location most notably visit by homeless people, drunks, and addicts; They have really increased security.

Just note; trespassing is trespassing, it's against the law. (always check for signs and know you are taking a risk)

Oh... another note: You really should go during the day, you would not believe how dark it can get inside these buildings, and nothing looks more incredible that a room illuminated with natural light.
