I have been interested in photography since the first time I saw some shots that were really inspiring, they almost never got out of my mind. Since this morning, I have been thinking about buying my own DSLR.

tl;dr What DSLR should newbies start with?

@ OP, Canon's EOS line (400D, 450D, 30D, 40D) are all good for beginning. They're cheap and a lot of retailers sell them with lens kits (18-55mm and 75-300mm).

Do some online research on some of these, each one i mentioned is simple to use and produce great quality photos, perfect for beginning and even when you get a lot better.

But then again, there is also the Nikon D80, another great entry level DSLR.

Go to your local camera shop and have a talk with them, you might be able to sort out a deal.

:)

OMG Since this morning? You should definitely get the Canon 1D MkIII with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6... It's definitely the best combination for your experience level based on the information you've offered so far

Be aware that the previous Nikon 50/1.8 does not support the D40 (or vice versa) so you must make sure you get the new model with the focusing motor built-in to the lens. other than that, this advice is rather apt

yeah, the mods are a bit narcy today... I had to insult somebody three times before it would stick!

Hey OP... I got my first DSLR a few months ago. I went for the Nikon D80, 18-200 VR, 50/1.8, and got myself a manual Tamron 200m f3.5 to play with.

So far so good, but still not the cheapest peanut in the turd.

To be honest, the D40 with 18-55 kit lens will suit your purposes very well to begin with and has plenty of room to upgrade. Shouldn't set you back much at all, but take into account costs such as:
Bag(s)
Memory Card(s)
Filters if you swing that way
Tripod

After you have these toys, you should be considering:
Remote or Cable
Flash
