Recently I've been a bit dissapointed with the zoom lens on my digital rebel xt, almost to the point where point and shoots were starting to look good.

However, after crawling around the web today, I found this lens, the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro.

All of the reviews are *very* positive. I'm just wondering, would this be a good lens to take around and just snap pictures of everything?

Can it be all purpose?

It's a tele lents with digital rebel. Probably nice with portraits... altough the macro construction doesn't help. Probably autofocus is *slow* too.

it will be a little slow focusing, but thats only if it starts to hunt.
from infinity to like 3m, focusing range on the lens isn't that much, so it will be perfectly usable. but 3m or closer, it might be a little slow

I'd like lenses were all equiped with SSM motors

If you don't need macro, EF 50/1.8 is almost as good quality-wise, faster and three times cheaper. But both of these will be short telephoto on Rebel XT and not very useful as an all-round lens.

For an all-round lens similar to "normal" 50mm primes on film cameras, try Sigma 30/1.4. (Just make sure to try it before you buy it, as Sigma's QC is notoriously bad on these)

can't see shit captain.

I wouldn't use it as an all purpose. It's a bit of a telephoto on a 1.6x crop. Having tried to use a 50/1.8 for a while as my main lens got really annoying any time I wanted to take pictures indoors that weren't closeups.

What about your current zoom lens is disappointing you?

I'm getting much better at using it, but it's an older lens 28-105 canon ultrasonic, with the little yellow flower.

It's somewhat heavy and big, and when I have to carry other things with me I then have to leave the camera at home just because of the hassle.

I'm hoping with a smaller prime lens that won't be as much of a problem, and I've heard from multiple sources that prime lenses have better quality at a similiar price point to zooms.

Ahh. I can see that.

Yeah, a prime will give you better quality at a lower price, but you lose the versatility of being able to zoom.

You might want to consider the much-maligned kit lens as a good, light, all-purpose walk-around lens. It's not as sharp as a prime, but the 18-55mm range is hard to beat, especially for the price you can get 'em for on eBay. Or, even better, if you're willing to wait a bit, Canon's coming out with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for just $200 in about two months. I'm going to replace my kit lens with that as soon as I can.

well, also think it of this way, with this macro lens, you will get both, a sharp mid telephoto lens, great for portrait *ANNND*, a great top notch TRUE macro lens.

For a Walk around lens, that has a pretty "normal" perspective, The Sigma 30mm f1.4 is good.
HSM motor, so fast focusing
f1.4 so its good at night aswell
30mm = 46mm roughly on a Canon DSLR

Its about 400$ USD though.

I have a 55mm micro (nikon macro), and i use it all the time. In my experience, being able to focus up to 1:1 is far more useful than a big zoom range. It really opens up new possibilities that weren't there with the rest of your lenses that only focus to 1:7 or 1:8.
