im using the 55-200mm kit lens
and i believe f/5.6 is the max i went.
so basically this is the limit of the lens?

get a tripod. tell them to stop moving around :D haha.

though at higher iso, you do get more noise, so a program like noise ninja is great for removing noise from higher ISO photos. I would say at most you'd want to go with 800 ISO, any more and the picture quality degrades very quickly.

Get a faster lens. If you have a kit lens that comes with most dSLRs ie: 18-55mm f/3.5 - 5.6, invest about $150 and pick up a 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.7 lens. Open it up to the max aperture (smallest f-stop value, meaning set it at f/1.8 as opposed to f/8) and make sure you're focused.

trust me, a faster lens will do wonders, more than boosting the iso can

Aperture!

You were shooting at f/5.6. Sony has a nice cheap 50mm f/1.7 you could get (or at least Minolta did. I don't actually know if Sony still produces that one, and I can't be arsed to check) which would be a little over 2 stops faster. That would change your 1/13th shutter speed into a little over 1/100th.

... Little over 3 stops faster, I mean.

Minolta lenses fit Sony dslrs, get one off ebay. Make sure it's the right mount though.

minolta 50/1.7s have been going for around $120. best just to save up and get the new sony with the digital coatings, rounded aperture, etc.

thanks for the advices guys.

but having 50mm lens, you cant have a closeup pic unless you sit close to the front.
But i will look around for fast lens w/ lower F

1) Fast lens - get a M42 (Pentax/Praktika screw mount) f/1.2 lens and adaptor for your cam.
2) Tripod and timing - mount the camera firmly, shoot when your subject slows down.
3) PP (post-processing) trickery - shoot 1 or 2 stops dark, brighten as needed while editing.
4) Infrared - use a NiteShot cam with external IR light and maybe IR flash.
5) Positioning - move in much closer, stay on lit side of subject - exploit candles etc.
