I want to start making money taking pictures. Even if I can't live off it. Anything to get some cash. I have no real experience except I took some portraits of a mother and son for $50. My tools are:

your equipment is sufficient.
protip: ask local club owners if they need party-photos for their flyers/cards/websites.
titties & cash.

I'm a college student with almost the same equipment (same lenses, except I have a D70) and a Nikon SB-600 Speedlight. I bought that stuff back when I was a freshman and I've made a couple grand off of it.

My most stable position is the university photographer. I got in contact with the public affairs department and they were happy to hire me for half their normal rate (which was nice since they save money and I got experience).

Then I shot events with another guy as his 2nd photographer. I didn't get as much as him but it was still a couple hundred a shoot.

Then I realized that lots of prospective models want photographers on campus. Luckily, they're willing to pay. So I take them to a nearby park, they start taking off their clothes, and we both benefit.

Just use your head... there's a thousand ways to make cash, as long as you have a good eye. You don't need $10k of equipment and lenses to make some money.

you just have to start getting out there, and asking questions. best thing, is go to a party, wedding, anything like that and use your camera, SO many people will be asking for you to photograph them. like today, i actually have a photoshoot, some lady needs her jean line photographed, and i know her personally, so i'm only charging her $400, which isn't too bad.

but just start asking around.
