I see what you mean about the awkward focus. The TOP of the bottom and the drawing are in focus, but everything else is not.

Makes me think there are some creative things that can be done by taking photos at angles and having PARTS of multiple objects in focus.

i guess in taking shots like that figuring out what the true subject is and making that in focus would be priority

I think it's maybe the focus and/or DoF. It's the sort of feeling I get from looking at fake tilt/shift miniature photography. I dunno, really. (shrug)

When taking a photo on a tilted angle like that, when your aperture size is such that there is a very narrow plane in focus, you do create a funny effect. That can be a cool thing to play with. I think your problem here is composition. I'd either crop the image closer to the stool or pan over so that it the stool is not so horizontally centered . . . just thoughts.
