Hai guys.
So, im going to get a flash for my 400d/XTi. I Have a 17-70mm Sigma and a 10-22mm Canon lense.

I have never used a external flash, but i belive they could get handy. That said i dont think ill go for the Speedlite 580EX II, but insted grap the 430EX (I / II?) since i can get it for half the price. Thoughts?

Yes

i have the 430EX and its great!
its not too bad with super duper wide angle lenses either, like the 10-22 you got ther.

stops the ghosting that you get from stupid arse popup flash with the wide lenses aswell.

don't get the 580 unless your seriously considering moving to portraiture where multiple flashes are required.

the 430 should serve you well.

You're doing something wrong. Get out of AUTO.

heh, i was at this event a week ago or something, some guy with a 400D w/ kit lens was taking photos. he was on full auto and it was a bit dark, and he didn't want to flash. the flash kept popping up and he kept pushing it down when it did. he did that for about 20 times before he noticed me and my friend laughing our asses off, then he left.

i never use auto. its just sometimes the spare of the moment requires flash.

but occasionally the shadow look is kind of cool.

Uh, I think he meant the shadow cast by the lens when you're using the built-in flash with ultra wide lenses.

Yes, he's doing it wrong. But that has nothing to do with "AUTO"

Get a Vivitar 285hv or Sunpak 383.

only poor bitches buy those

Oh, he meant hard shadow. I thought he was talking about slow shutter ghosting after a flash.

And real men who don't need the automatic faggotry of a $400 flash.
