Alright /p/ so I'm thinking of buying the Canon 85mm 1.8, but I don't shoot a ton* of portraits, but I am wondering if this lens is a practical one outside of the realm of portraits? Also, I'll be using it on a crop sensor, so will the crop factor make it too long of a lens?

tl;dr: Is the 85mm 1.8 useful for general use, and not just portraits?

in b4 gear thread, cancer destroying /p/ etc.

if you want a good walk around prime for the best money, check out the
50mm 1.8
50mm 1.4
24mm 2.8
20mm 2.8

depending on which focal distance best suits you

Well I already have the 50 1.8 so I was wondering if this would be a nice supplement or an unwieldy lens for general use. I've also got the 17-85 so I don't really want a wide prime, I was also thinking of getting the 100 2.8, which I'm assuming would be the best alternative the the 85 1.8

Our pressroom has some 20Ds and these along with other basic lenses and accessories. They work pretty well at events or theaters and the f1.8 is appreciated. Anon's right about it not really being a walk-around lens though.

I was also thinking of getting the 100 2.8 macro*

And am I correct in assuming it's the best alternative to the 85 1.8 because of its 1:1 capabilities? Because I figure with that I've got a good portrait/long prime with the benefit of a great macro lens.

get a 50 or near 50 equivalent lens. The Sigma 30/1.4 comes into mind the Canon equivalents are fine too but they are kind of outdated.

(To elaborate: how the hell can a lens be outdated if it still makes good pictures? If a lens stays in continous production over a long span of time, that's generally an indication the design cannot be substantially improved upon.

The Canon 28/2.8, 35/2, and 28/1.8 (though I personally dislike its bokeh) are all fine lenses.)

sorry i meant OLD lens.

several tests have revealed the Sigma to be a contender as well.

Me too. Im looking at the 100mm macro to serve as a portrait lens. I have the 18-55 kit and the 50mm. Any comments /p/?

>i shoot a 40d with a 50mm 1.8 and it is almost too much for a walk around lens, perfect for portraits though. but if you were shooting full frame i figure it'd be ok

I sometimes shoot using a K10D and a 50mm ƒ1.4 and I have to agree. It's a great lens especially considering the price, but I feel like I might like something a bit shorter. On a crop sensor like mine I feel like I'd be happier with a 40mm or a 35mm.

If you already have a 50mm I'd probably go shorter rather than longer. Unless you find yourself wishing you had a longer lens when you're shooting with the 50mm it would probably be better to go down to the 21mm for street shots.

85 on a crop isn't that useful for everyday stuff, but it's nice for events like concerts.

cro mabs

Cro mabs are almost never an issue if:

- You're not shooting into the sun wide open. For most people, f/1.8 is saved for OHMYFUCKINGGODTHERE'SNOLIGHT situations. For people whose style favors shallow depth of field, a lens with bad cro mabs might be something to dodge.
- You're not shooting film and you're not too lazy to fix them in post.

I don't know if cro mabs are an issue or not with the 28/1.8- I honestly don't- but they're not a lens killer, for most users, on digital.
