this was my first attempt at converting a photo into bw, is it any good? If not, any tips? I just used the channel mixer, set to monochrome and messed around with the sliders until I thought it looked ok.

can you post the color photo?

I'm sure that your technique for converting something to black and white is perfectly fine. However, the more difficult task is to select which pictures will look better in b&w versus color. Even if you have a digital camera, you should take your shots with some intentions, not as some sort of afterthought. (i.e. "I want this to be in b&w")

When you're taking pictures with the aim of converting them to b/w try and focus on achieving shots with lots of contrast.

I think your mistake was converting this one to B&W. The bricks are interestingly colored.

Even more so when you tweak the levels.

yeah push contrast and leave it in color. The background is a little distracting to have it in B&W. In color it's very eye pleasing.
