i definitely see some weird compositing errors. there are a bunch of visible round brush strokes right below the chin on the left, and below that a pure black rectangle.

and maybe, a real critique. there seems to be a lack of focus in your photos. not technical focus, but mental focus. your lighting is beautiful, along with all the very pretty post processing. the photos are a joy to look at, but a lot of the time they just don't make sense to me. it's like, you set up the lights, stuck your 5D on a tripod, then told everybody to make zany faces. maybe that's what you're going for, like it's a parody or something. but a parody of what? commercial images? what is this photo about? i love your work, i'm just having trouble figuring it out.

so, could you explain it to me? what's your thesis?

and a small note to the rest of /p/. we all have interpretations of pskaught's photos, but i'm interested specifically in what he has to say. everyone speaking FOR pskaught that is not pskaught will be ignored and branded an asskisser. speaking ABOUT him is coo', what with it being discussion and all.

I felt the same way as each of his individual "Imps" photographs were posted, but together in the calendar they seem to come together and build a theme very well.

His other work...

His fashion work is, well, fashion work. Well-done, rarely genuinely good art.

http://toasterfoot.houseofsprouts.com/images/fashion2/elic/087.jpg

is great, though.

He's got some great work in the "Portraits" section of his website... the black-and-white ones, whoever the guy is one the end of the strip...

"... F.L. GEBHART" is interesting, but is a very conventional "conceptual staged art photography series." I'm guessing it's early work.

"Schizo" seems to be the first move towards the style that led to "Imps."

And the photographs he did of the prostitutes are great, too.

I think he's got major talent, and I don't think "Imps" is half of what he can do artistically, as good as it is. With artistic ambition, experience and studying other great visual art, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he could really do something totally revolutionary with photography as a medium.

good point, and a lot of reactions are the same. I threw a couple of "film shows" while I was in college and a teacher I had put it best, "its like art films making fun of art films." Honestly I can not stand serious art, I think, at least for myself, the best way to express art is through comedy. The imps is kind of an exercise of "what can we do" and the whatever the next series we do will be a lot more focused as far as subject matter. But being random and goofy with a possibility of social commentary seems to put some smiles on people's faces.

thanks, thats a fantastic comment and insight into my work. You nailed everything on the head. you defiantly know what you're talking about, I feel the same way about all of it.

If you have not seen it, here's the rest of the series:

these are for the show, we bought some really gaudy frames from a swap meet and are doing individual portraits.

Todd's picture is going to be brutal. I will post tomorrow night.

by the way, anyone in the LA area should come out to the gallery show this Saturday.

YES i frikkin love you! i the only thing i cant stand more than serious art is the people view it in a gallery thinking highly of themselves for being "cultured".

tacky frames and satirical art for epic win.

I'm all for serious art and even I hate the gallery system. Art ought not to be this big pretentious and almost commercial thing galleries have made it into. There still has to be galleries for paintings and sculptures, but the ability to make the same print over and over again in a book or just use the web for photographs really negates the need for galleries in photography. Just the work and the viewer, in a book or on a monitor, without some snobby fuck leaning over their shoulder they feel they have to impress.

Counterpoint: A lot of the best photography is best displayed in very large prints that wouldn't fit in a book or a The Internet.

Counterpoint: You can fit an awfully large "print" on a modern, high-resolution monitor being viewed at about the distance of a forearm, if not less.

But yes, there will always be some people who prefer to print larger. Private viewing booths with giant CRTs in them would be the solution. A one-time investment for a gallery in a few sets of cubicle walls, monitors, and cheap plastic chairs wouldn't be too much.

>>100867
Pskaught has shot some fashion photography, but this definitely isn't. The style is similar to fashion photography, but that's it.

I don't think he was trying to sell goggles or dress shirts in the manner of Joseph's coat.

Speaking of Joseph's coat, I smell jealousy.

Kaught is one of the few reasons I still frequent /p/ because there are so many fags on here who look down on anybody else trying to learn how to take a good photo.
>> Anonymous
>>100869
Why?
>> Anonymous
>>100869

dont get me wrong, all of this guys photos are technically astute, but they lack any substance. there is nothing engaging about the work at all.

the negative view of modern art on /p/ is due to lack of understanding. /p/ has no contemporary point of reference to judge anything by.

What I am trying to point out is that instead of being constructive most replies to a posters attempts at photography are destructive. But this is 4chan so it's to be expected. There are very few instances where you see Anon actually being helpful. That being said /p/ is more helpful than /g/ ;)

1. I disagree. It's easy to dismiss because of its style, but there's definitely something here. Was Hieronymus Bosch just trying shock with his works? (I cite Bosch because I see a direct artistic lineage, or at least linkage, between Bosch's major works and "The Imps of Marge and Fletch." Pskaught just adds his brand of humor to Bosch's wild depictions. If Bosch can be seen as one of the most important figures in Western art, you can't impugn pskaught for picking up with his 5D and strobes where Bosch left off.)

When I think of pskaught's work, I think of how Christopher Hitchens described the work of Martin Amis: "a vivid, lasting illustration of comic brilliance allied to high intelligence."

2. >the negative view of modern art on /p/ is due to lack of understanding. /p/ has no contemporary point of reference to judge anything by.

Heh. When you're talking modern photographic art, what do you mean? DiCorcia? There's somebody with technically astute pictures lacking substance.

There's plenty of good photographic artists working today. Loads. James Nachtwey, David Alan Harvey, Joel-Peter Witkin, Sally Mann, Elliot Erwitt, Abbas, Elsa Dorfman, Josef Koudelka, Martin Parr (who pskaught's work also has much in common with), Brian Ulrich, William Eggleston...

I'm sure many people on /p/ are familiar enough with those names.
>> Anonymous
heironymous bosch? come on. hyperbole isn't going to help your case. pskaught is a good photographer, but a wild visionary on par with bosch? you're overstating your point. go check out an photo school's senior gallery. you'll see lots and lots of far out stuff.

simply put, pskaught is a great technical photographer with some ingenius ideas whose work will become very interesting once he puts down the bong and starts concentrating.

http://impsofmargeandfletch.com/6.html

It's clearer with this work than anywhere else.

Like I said earlier in the thread, he's got much room for artistic growth. I was noting a commonality of style between Bosch's most notable works (especially "Ship of Fools") and "The Imps of Marge and Fletch," and honestly I don't see how you wouldn't see that if you were familiar with them and "Imps."
>> Anonymous
Actually, rather, this one shows it even better:

>> flashboxx
>>100813

i hate to go waaaay back in the discussion, but there is no way to compare looking at physical prints in real life to looking at them on a monitor. being a photographer, i love being able to see nuances in the prints. if you look at a print on a monitor, yes, it looks ok, but there is no way to compare it with seeing all of the colors(or shades of gray for b+w) exactly how the artist intended it to be seen. there is a reason galleries still exist, especially for non-digital photography.
>> Anonymous
>>100919
Monitors have more dynamic range than photographic paper.

A monitor calibrated the same way as the artist's will display the photograph the same way he saw it.
>> Anonymous
>>100922

it's stupid to even try and compare the two. one is emitted light, the other is reflected. glossy vs. matte, 256 levels of gray vs. several thousand. dynamic range has nothing to do with it.
>> ...and in conclusion. pskaught
This is the most insightful thread I've ever seen.
>>100887
Hey man, I stopped smoking pot a while ago.
>>100895
I went to the Academy of Art College, for cinematography, dropped out after 2 and a half years and moved down to LA to start working in the film industry. I don't have any training in photography. Everything I've learned is trial and error, I just don't post too much of the error. There's a lost calendar picture that is so bad it'll never see the light of day and their is a reason the postcard picture never made it on the calendar.
>>100899
I see what you're saying there, and it is my ultimate goal to create pictures so full of information like works similar to bosch and other portrait painters of that time period, that you could stare at them for hours.
>>100919
QFT! I agree, everyone sees different shit on their monitors, its a horrible way to display stills. With prints everyone sees the same thing. As someone who works with video and film, a monitor can only be so true and can shift over a matter of hours, That and LCD and Plasma are a shitty representation of color.

thanks for the enlightening thread everyone and as far as my work being considered "art" I discussed it earlier in the thread and think of it more as comedy, and the interpretation being subjective. I admit my work is stylized and geared toward fashion and editorial, which is how I'm trying to sell myself. The imps are just trying to sell some calendars and make their investment back while getting their names out.

PROTIP: pskaught=scott though I like the P.S. Kaught interpretation.

I'm a big fan of speedotron, because they're simple and affordable and still very well made. just look for a used set. If you have too much money, buy some profoto. Otherwise pick up a blackline, if you want some soft boxes, don't go cheap, you'll regret it. buy chimera, not westcott. As far as stands, buy american or avenger stands, don't buy cheap because they'll probably snap. Pick up dome gels and diffusion, especially diffusion. down the road you can slowly buy more and more pieces and expand your kit. just remember, cheap gear is cheap for a reason, and ALWAYS PAY THE SHIPPING INSURANCE AND CONTACT THE SELLAR IF ITS EBAY!!!
