If you're concerned about economy, specially about not paying for more than what you're actually getting, then don't consider that other brand. Most of their equipment is significantly more expensive, without yielding much, if any, improvement over your first choice.

The 'improvement' from using the other brand's gear is -marginal- in comparison to how good technique and favorable lighting conditions improve your pictures.

As for dust protection I don't know how important it is, but my has it, and my sensor's still very clean after 6 months, only noticeable at F22 and if pixel-peeping.

Hm. Most sources say the 400D/Rebel XTi has a shutter with an average lifetime of 50,000 shots.

Quick calculation says I've taken around 52,000.

Guess I'm on borrowed time.

(My google searching also suggests that shutter replacement's around $200, though, so there's that)

I've got a 30d and i love it, you can't really go wrong with choosing one. How much are you looking to spend? Technology gets outdated pretty fast so it'd probably be best to get the newest model you can afford. If you grab a 10d you might want to upgrade pretty soon.
