Canon G10 vs. $40,000 Hasselblad Anonymous
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/kidding.shtml

>> The next afternoon I hiked into the forest with my tripod, Hasselblad H2 and P45+ with the Hasselblad 55-110mm lens attached, and photographed a lovely deep forest fall scene. As I stood there wondering where to go next I put my hands in my vest pocket (it was a chilly fall morning), and there was the Canon G10.

>> That evening I looked at the files on my laptop screen, along with several other people, and we were amazed to see that the differences between the 39 Megapixel medium format system and the 15 Megapixel pocket digicam didn't seem that dramatic – certainly not as big as one might have expected. In fact, with the files in Lightroom I usually couldn't tell which was which without pixel-peeping.

>> In every case no one could reliably tell the difference between 13X19" prints shot with the $40,000 Hasselblad and Phase One 39 Megapixel back, and the new $500 Canon G10. In the end no one got more than 60% right, and overall the split was about 50 / 50, with no clear differentiator. In other words, no better than chance.

G10 > medium format

Hasselblad H2 with Phase One P45+ back
55–110mm lens @ 70mm
1 second @ f/11 at ISO 50

If you're buying a Hasselblad H2 to make 13X19" prints, you should be shot anyhow. Also, where's my exchangeable lens on the G10?
OP is made out of fail.

Canon G10
6–30mm lens at 12mm
1/8 second @ f/3.5 at ISO 80

From those two pictures, I'd go for the G10. The colors are more natural instead of oversaturated, and the dynamic range seems to be better.

hasselblad has more megapixels so no matter what other cameras can do they wont beat the hasselblad because you make better photos with more megapixels

the guy at luminous landscape is just as bad as ken rockwell

both are fucking idiots

The LL guy never says the G10 is as good as a Hasselblad. The point is that consumer cameras are getting so good that even experts will have trouble telling what gear shot which pic. I picked up a G10 last weekend and it's a great p&s to keep handy but I will still do most of my shooting with my 40D.

why a G10 over a DMC-LX3

Damn, that looks tempting, there any other bridge cams that are that flat (most seem to be unpocketable lumps that seem to make it almost unworthwile to lug it vs a DSLR or a decent P&S).

Well of course a compact camera will take pictures almost identical to the highest end cameras in the proper conditions. On a well lit sunny day, the only major difference between them would be depth of field. Every other mechanical difference is too small to notice (even sharpness and noise).

The reason you get high end cameras is for shooting in places that compacts can't.

LET'S BUY $40,000 WORTH OF CAMERA EQUIPMENT, TAKE FAIL PHOTOS, CHARGE DUMB YUPPIES THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR SEMINARS AND THEN CALL OURSELVES EXPERTS.

DURRRRRRRR.

Well, if you're looking at just shooting in proper conditions an SLR isn't really what you need. Go Large Format, or go for a scanning back if your subject will allow it. THEN the compact won't be able to compare.

But yeah, in adverse situations (say you need to freeze motion with a 1/500 shutter speed, but it's dark enough that even with an f/2.8 aperture you need ISO 6400. Assuming you get a compact that has an f/2.8 aperture, and set it to 1/500 and it allows you to get ISO 6400 - I'm sorta kinda inclined to say that the P&S image is going to be ever so slightly noisy.

There are also all of the usability and ergonomic aspects. It's _way_ faster to shoot manual on an SLR, the viewfinder is way, way better, focus is better, shutter lag is way lower, continuous is better, etc. Also there are a lot of specialized lenses available. I needs my MP-E65 1-5X Macro lens already...

Also, addendum: 13X19? That's tiny. Rebels can print that easily, no problem. Why are we* surprised that in decent light a G10 can? Print 40X60 and try again.

Note: By we, I mean anyone surprised.

/p/: if it can't shoot low light, narrow dof, high iso, it sucks

amateur here,
what's the advantage of having a medium format digital camera in the first place over a DSLR? i thought the only real difference was size and aspect ratio, or am i missing something really important?
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ

nah. just a bigger sensor, more pickles, perfect lenses, and leaf shutters. they're professional instruments with no compromises.

i have no idea why the hasselblads cost 40 grand, though.

I'M A FUCKING IDIOT AND MY SUBJECTIVE COMPARISON HAS JUST SET THE FIELD OF TECHNICAL REVIEWS BACK 20 YEARS

bitch please, you do not use a 40mp camera for photo printing.

Enjoy your blurry b1 posters.
