best zoom for Nikon D60 Anonymous
what is the best zoom for the Nikon D60 for cheap?

i found the Nikon 18-70mm AF-S DX for $330

but people say the the Tamron 17-50mm XR is better, it's $450

what's the main difference?

One of them is made by nikon, the other is made by tamron.

...also the aperture. The tamrom 17-50 is 2.8 constant and the nikon one is like 3.5-4.5

get the tamron.

One won't AF, the other will...

They both AF. I just bought the 17-50 10 mins ago. Can't wait for it to get here!

Both have perfectly good image quality.

The Tamron is faster and has a constant aperture, but it is more expensive and has horrible build quality.

The Nikon is cheaper and has better build quality (though still not great), but is slow and variable aperture.

It really doesn't matter which you get. If I personally were faced with a choice between these two and only these two lenses, I would probably get the Nikon out of principle. I refuse to buy any Tamron lenses because despite making very good optics they insist on producing plasticky, horribly-built pieces of crap. They could dominate the 3rd party lens market if they just upped their build quality.

Or at least the situation in which the 28-75 outshines the 17-50 hasn't popped up for me. : [

Frankly, you can trust Nikon gear. The same goes for high end Canon gear. It's reliable. It's sturdy. It will take the abuse that goes with professional rigors. You can pick up a Nikon every day, and use it, just like you use a tool. Hell, you can drive nails with old Nikons. That's the quality we're talking about here.
