Hey /p/. I don't get why everyone here uses M(anual) shooting mode all the time. From my experience with my point and shoot with manual aperture and shutter speed, it doesn't make a difference 90% of the time. Of course there are some instances where you need to control both, but most of the time using Av or Tv mode works just as well and is faster.

Could you guys post some examples of a pic shot in manual vs automatic modes so I can see how much better it is? The picture was shot using manual mode on my A520 (through a window screen).

And this was using P mode. These pictures are straight from the camera and not cropped or resized or anything.

I also shot in Av and Tv modes and they looked identical to these.

I think you're missing the point. Someone else explain cause I'm lazy.

Shooting in M doesn't make it "better" and doesn't necessarily mean that your photos will turn out better. It just allows the user more control over lighting which, in the right hands, can make a big difference.

Then why does everyone here say that you need to shoot in manual mode all the time? Is it some superiority complex? P mode will allow you to achieve the same results as manual except under specific conditions where you need control over the depth of field and the shutter speed.

what>>193262said.

also, M is important for situations where the camera's metering will fuck up. Say a bride in a pretty white dress. The Camera will think that it's way overexposed so the cam will pic a setting which will underexpose the brides face.

Isn't that what spot metering is for?

But I don't want her face in dead center of the pic.

not all cameras have spot metering.
still, some really captivating pictures have been taken, that would have otherwise been impossible to take without using M.

there is this one picture of a prenup, with the bride and groom kissing in the middle of the street and all the passersby were blurred. This would not have been achieved with any full or partially manual modes.

(anybody know of this picture? I had it bookmarked but sadly i'm not on my own computer right now.)

Tv mode, set long shutter. Av mode, set small aperture. P mode, scroll over until you get to what works.

I just realized this is a troll in this thread. *sigh* sage this shit.

I shoot in M almost exclusively because I think it makes me a better photographer. I have to be more aware of what I want out of a scene and how to capture it in M. Green box or P shooting ends up as P&S pictures for me, more in composition than image quality.

stop trollan, keep sagean!

OP here. Anyone have a real answer?

From what I've gathered, using M doesn't make you a better photographer. Knowing how to does, but ultimately it comes down to user preference.

no one really said that M makes you a better photographer. And as you say, knowing how to take a good picture is key.

M is for when you want to experiment, get creative.

blah blah blah, no one else is on tonight? damn. maybe ac or Vincent could explain this better...too bad for you bro.

oh yeah, here have some sage.

not trolling, just counter points to why you think M is so awesome. M is just so you can take a picture how you want it instead of what the camera suggests. most of the time the camera will do a fine job. there are times where you want something different than what the camera wants or the camera gets confused by really light/dark objects or continuously changing light. other than that, any of the other modes would do just fine.

p.s. whoever this TheGeneral guy is gets butthurt far too easily.
>> TheGeneral !m7n7x2Yyfo
yeah ok. whatever. too sleepy for this. yes Av or Tv can take great pics. No M does not automatically make a FUCKWIN! picture.

I'm not getting butthurt, just felt like sagean...gonna stop now coz i'm going to sleep.

How do you think you get better in M? By using it.
>> Anonymous
>>193288
i think its more about knowing what settings to use to get what you want then getting used to turning dials in M.
>> Anonymous
>>193290
How do you think you figure out what settings you want? Practice, lots of it.
>> Anonymous
>>193288
The point isn't to get better at using manual mode, it's knowing how to use the camera effectively.

>>193293
Exactly, which for some is taking full control of their camera.

It's just a matter of setting everything yourself. You know how shutter speed and aperture work, right? You set those, you set the iso, if you're using flash it doesn't automatically change the exposure to compensate so you have to underexpose based on what the meter tells you.
That's it.That's all there is. Read your manual for specifics. If you're used to using A, S, or P, it isn't that much different on modern cameras. Ever since I learned exposure, I find the scene modes more difficult to use than M, because they do things I don't always expect, and it's easier to just set it myself.
