Canon vs Nikon
Hello /p/. To all Canon and Nikon SLR/DSLR owners:
What was the decisive moment that made you decide to go for Nikon or Canon.

For me in my newfagness, it was how impressed I was at how fast and accurate Canon's AF was compared with Nikon.

When Canon beat the living shit out of every Nikon camera. Then I bought a rebel and Nikon released the D3 and I said to myself "Couldn't afford it anyway"

The D80 was cheaper than the 450D and was sturdier, had better ergonomics (dual wheels ftw) and a better viewfinder.

Nikon grip was better, lens variety appeared better, and i worked with a canon rep once who was a total faggot.

That is all.

you're a fucking retard. if you're impressed with the AF then talk about lenses not the cam body

Good point. Which company made what you wanted IN YOUR BUDGET. Everyone can fap over the 1D, 5D or D3, but it's pointless if you aren't going to buy it.

Nikon ergonomics, canon felt like shitty plastic made for little girls hands.

This, plus the fact that most of my friends have Nikons, so it's easier for me to borrow or try out lenses.

pentax k10d was the clear winner in the price range i wanted to spend. - it only had to beat the likes of

( A100, 400D, D80 and kinda 30D )

I knew it was not the right choise for sports, but i dont shoot sports - so meh.

in hindsight, if i could choose again, i would go with nikon for 1 reason I-ttl and CLS support. everything else, i find pentax works just fine for.

went with canon cos the only affordable d-slr at the time was the 300D, nikon was still way too expensive and even the next canon up was still cheaper than the cheapest nikon.

too easy back then, and yes, id probably still pick canon again if starting...

LOL Canon and autofocus.

my dad has a 350D and my friend has a 400D, so I bought a 400D as well so we could potentially swap camera gear. I also really disliked the prospect of having no autofocus motor in the low-end Nikon cameras, and I couldn't buy a higher end Nikon. (Note: I warned my friend about this before he got his D40x and he still bought it; now he regrets it and envies my cheap 50mm f/1.8 with autofocus)
>> Anonymous
I use both because I hate making decisions

I didn't know nikon exists back then... well ... I did, but you haven't heard anything of them.
... and the 300D was THE digital slr back then to get on a budget, and I was on a budget, and now I won't be changing my system.
unfortunately though my father bought a nikon and now we can't share lenses.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
I'd used a Canon P&S previously and was happy with it. And this was back before the D40 dropped, so there was nothing priced equivalent to the Rebel series from Nikon.
>> Anonymous
Nikons are bigger, sturdier, more ergonomic and have better menus and lens'.

tldr:

CANON MAKE PLASTIC CAMERAS FOR PROFESSIONALS.

NIKON MAKES STURDY CAMERAS FOR AMATEURS.

Frankly, you can trust Nikon gear. The same goes for high end Canon gear. It's reliable. It's sturdy. It will take the abuse that goes with professional rigors. You can pick up a Nikon every day, and use it, just like you use a tool. Hell, you can drive nails with old Nikons. That's the quality we're talking about here.

When you make your livelihood, you don't choose the brand that offers an equivalent, even similar system, you choose the brand that is a trustworthy and time-tested tool. Thus, Nikon. There are always distinctions to be made between Nikon and Canon, but I've often heard this statement, and I believe it: Canons are the best cameras made by engineers, but Nikons are the best cameras made by photographers. It's a generalization, but that feels very true to me.
>> savage !!4UjFwZgP/SG
The D50 had a better kit lens and felt sturdier than the canon rebel.

thats the phrase i was trying to remember.

As soon as nikon catches up with canon on things like sensor shake and maybe in built VR, canons done for.

Canon, Sony, and Panasonic are the only companies making sensors for digicams, in the consumer realm. Nikon lagged behind Canon in image quality for so many years, because they were relying on Sony to produce chips in an area sony had little interest in, while Canon invested billions in R&D and fab plants to build their own. With Nikon's last couple high-end cams, the D3, D300, and D700, Sony for the first time delivered chips with superior noise characteristics to Canon sensors. Don't be fooled by "co-developed by Nikon and Sony" non-sense in brochures, it's all Sony. That's just a Japanese technique for Nikon to save face. The issue for Nikon is that they are a very small company compared to Canon. Canon's primary business is office printers, and they have loads of cash in the bank to pursue breakthroughs in camera tech for the still and video department. Sony does as well, of course, and that is an issue now for Nikon. Why? Because Sony now makes their own DSLR's. Sony mentioned they were going to release a 24MP+ full-frame body in the not-too-distant future. Luckily Nikon and Sony have a good relationship currently, and Nikon should be fine for the next few years. The best part about Nikon being too poor to build their own chips, is that since they were stuck with crap sensors (compares to Canon's), they went over-board trying to make fantastic bodies. The D300 is a superb example of that. For the money, that is one fantastic cam. But, really, it's more for gearheads. Silly stuff like HDMI out and dozens of focus points.
>> Anonymous
Sony and Canon have nothing to be concerned about, and again, if there was an issue, Sony would just say, "yeah, not so much" and Nikon would put it's tail between it's legs, and bow down to it's master.
>> Anonymous
Sony is gracious intermidiary, supplying both canon and nikon with their point-and-shoot chips. Image Stabilization was co-developed by Canon and Sony. In video cameras, it was first seen in Sony's, of course, and in still cameras in Canon's. In the late 80's, Canon debuted the EOS mount, forever changing still cameras. With this new, huge, electronic mount, Canon was easliy able to develop silent focusing lenses, add image stabilization, etc, as all the tech was in the lens itself, interfacing with the camera electronically. Nikon stuck with their 50's mount, and had a heck of a time figuring out how to make a queit lens, let alone add image stabilization. They eventually added electronic contacts to the mount of course, like canon, but are currently in the messed up state of having a majority of their lenses still requiring a mechanical link. Nikon's cheaper DSLR's no longer have the mechanical link, so most Nikon lenses can not autofocus.

If you want access to Nikon's full range of lenses, you need to spend more money on a higher-end cam. With Canon, the cheapest camera you can get is fully-compatible with every EOS lens ever made. The benefit of Nikon's system is you can use crap lenses from the 50's, if you buy their more expensive cameras. The benefit of Canon's is that all camera buyers can enjoy all their lenses. The other big advantage to Canon's huge EOS mount, is that you can put lenses from any manufacturer on it, including those same crap Nikon lenses from the 50's, or Leica's finest.

>>260169

do you have any actual proof that sony made the D3 and D700 sensor? as far as i know, no one knows who made it. it could just as easily have been nikon, who would undoubtedly be eager to start manufacturing their own sensors again since sony got into the dslr market.
>> Anonymous
When Canon had the EF mount and Nikon had the F mount, and basically anything can be adapted to EF. I had too many great old lenses to just give them up and switch to expensive heavy new auto-everything glass.
>> Anonymous
>>260172

No, the D3 sensor is designed by Nikon, a successor to their JFET LBCAST sensors, but is likely built by Sony in Kyushu in their Fab2 plant next to the D300/D90 sensors that Sony makes and is also in the A-700. Sony also makes the sensors in the D40/D60/D80. The 24.8MP full-frame sensor in the A900 will also be found in the Nikon D3x.

Sorry, Nikon does not have the moneys to develop sensors.
>> Anonymous
Why there's a D200 next to a 5D?

Biased thread is biased.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>260174

>Sorry, Nikon does not have the moneys to develop sensors.

a bold claim, especially since you're familiar with JFET LBCAST. nikon swore to continue development on it after they developed it for the D2H, and they've only grown financially since then.

truth is, nobody knows nothing.

>you can put lenses from any manufacturer on it, including those same crap Nikon lenses from the 50's, or Leica's finest

This is the reason I got a Canon, but you can't adapt Leica lenses to the EF mount. The Rs, sure, but no one ever called those "Leica's Finest". In general, you can put M42, Pentax K, Nikon F, Minolta A, and a host of other less well known mounts (Contax, Tamron T, etc) onto EF.
>> Anonymous
>>260181

Numbers simply do not lie.

They do not have the moneys for it, specially when they can just buy them off Sony who is more than happy to supply.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>260188
>The Rs, sure, but no one ever called those "Leica's Finest".
Well, only because they're not as well known. Same optical quality, just for the Leica mount nobody cares about.

Minolta manual-focus is another lens you can't stick on an EOS body, which makes me sad. Also, ironically, Canon manual-focus (without an expensive and hard-to-find adapter which adds optical elements)

I was going for the D70 for my first DSLR, but it had moiré issues and also some rumors about bad AF performance so i went for the 20D. I also am crazy for very fast lenses.

f/1.4 really is so pedestrian for me ;--)

Hahahaha. That really fits well! Feel free to use it if you want to.

The difference between 1.4 and 1.2 ain't huge image quality and dof-wise, but designing a 1.2 lense is really hard compared to 1.4. There's quite a difference between the aperture when i stop down to f/1.4 when looking through the lense. (1.2 = 70.833mm aperture and 1.4 = 60.714mm aperture)

Nikon had no fullframe, and I went with the general rule of saving on a body but getting good optics instead. Being my first dslr body, I'll replace my XTi eventually. I do in fact intend to upgrade straight into a 5D mk2 after this or equivalent.

Between getting a cheap body with functional AF for the time being vs one without it, I obviously took the one that does; I'm not getting a bigger camera for a while, but when I do, I know what I'm after.

Ergonomics, and dual command dial. Enough said. I don't need to do a whole lot of stupid hand contortions on even the D80 as opposed to the 400D. Even on my friends 5D, using the wheel was a huge bitch when I have it up looking through the viewfinder.

because canon had too much fanboyism with their "omg rebels" and for some reason, i tended to like the colours better of images i saw that had been shot with nikon cams. also they just seemed to have what i wanted, while the canon alternatives were either too old/shitty or a step too expensive.

i had been using a minolta x-370 for about five years when i got to use my aunt's Nikon FE2 for a day. it was love at first sight. now, of course, minolta made some cameras that were technically just as good as the FE2, as did canon and pentax and olympus and basically everyone. but the FE2 was so silky smooth and had so many features that blew my 16 year-old mind that i never looked back.

but it's really just the same old story.

you're young, the first camera you use impresses you (what camera wouldn't?), you fall in love with the brand for the rest of your life and spend all of your time arbitrarily and vigorously defending it.

I already have a canon superzoom. I love it to bits, but for me, the decision was the:
1 - nikon lens mount compatibility (i had a magical idea of shopping at garage sales and getting bargain lenses)
2 - some friends already have nikons and lenses and advice
3 - that bloody red rubber triangle
4 - 18-200mm VR nikkor
5 - Lord Nikon from Hackers
