hey /p/,
need some lens advice so i find myself stopping in again. I shoot with a canon rebel xti now, and i really love the shots i can get with my 50mm/1.8 but i find it incredible awkward to shoot with at casual functions because of how far back i have to be to frame my shots. I'm trying to figure out the math on this but I'm a little confused - what lens would you recommend to remedy the situation.

pic unrelated but taken by me

Sigma 30mm f/1.4

Sigma makes a 28, 24, and 20mm F1.8 Lens that Autofocuses.

I have the 24mm f1.8, greatest macro feature ever, BUT it flares quite badly. Great deal for the price though!

WTF? I use a Sigma 30mm on my 20D and it works flawlessly. The only risk is that somewhere way the fuck down the line (5-10 years from now) the lens might not work on a new body but even then it can be re-chipped to work.

theres a lot of reports of sigmas not properly autofocusing with canons. like, the focus is always a little off.

When I was shopping for a prime in this range myself, I read a bunch of reviews for the Sigma 30 and Sigma 28 telling Canon users not to buy them because the autofocus just wouldn't work right at all on almost every unit shipped, and that this was a general problem with Sigma lenses.

I don't shoot Canon, so that wasn't an issue for me, but I remember seeing reviews noting that.

what about for non-primes?

If you get one that focuses right, the 30mm is awesome. So go to a store and try a few.

seconded, only the build quality made me fork out a load of extra money for the 17-55 nikkor

dude the sigma is a fucking awesome lens.

this b/s about misfocussing is a crock of shit. i bet theyve sold a fuck load of that lens and what, ~30 people complain and its a bad lens.

cry me a fucking river timberlake, actually learn how to use a camera and talk to people who do more than take pictures of cats and fucking test charts.
search flickr and pbase for photos taken by it. then tell me its a shithouse lens.
/p/ noob

I'll agree with that too, i mean after all when something is wrong you'll get more people being more vocal about it. Just because you read about people having problems doesnt mean it's across the board.

I doubt people who don't have a problem will be as vocal about it as those who do.

The 30mm f/1.4 is a great lens, but I'll also attest that it can have focusing problems, moreso than your average lens. This is mostly because f/1.4 lenses demand greater focusing accuracy and any front/back focus will be much more obvious. Mine front-focused noticeably until I sent it back to Sigma for calibrating - now it's my favorite lens!

I never said it was a bad lens.

I said that, based on reports I had read about people *sending back the lens multiple times and still getting flawed units sent as a replacement* that it just doesn't seem to work well with Canon autofocus. (I'm a proponent of manual focus anyway, but I don't know OP's feelings on the subject or style of shooting.)

Telling me to go learn how to use a camera is a really stupid argument. Everyone on here knows how to use a camera, or else makes it obvious by posting shitty photoshops of things from their camera phone. I know how to use a camera; you know how to use a camera; stop being so immature about a silly lens.

what he said, this lens is amazing for the price is sharper than some L lenses without the same colour and build but is still an awesome lense.

I'd suggest a wide to normal zoom with a nice wide aperture. A decent flash would help too.

>I'd suggest a wide to normal zoom with a nice wide aperture.
>a wide to normal zoom with a nice wide aperture.
>zoom with a nice wide aperture.

I lol'ed. Besides that such lenses are more than a stop slower than the lenses previously mentioned, two full stops slower than one of them, have you ever thought OP might want a normal prime for a reason?

op here, i would like a normal prime. i'm sure i'll add few other lenses to my arsenal slowly but right now, i have a 50mm/1.8 and a 55-200mm/4.5-5.6. i lost my original rebel xt with the kit lens attached and i realy don't miss it that much, so for now i want to play with primes.

as of right now im tryin to price out a 28mm for around 300CAD.
