What kind of education in photography has /p/ gotten?
Self-teaching, college/university, workshops, etc.

I've taken one college photography class
I got more from teaching myself through books/observations, but this is partly because the class was taught by an oil painter.

There aren't options for a decent education here, at this point; apprenticeship at high school portrait studio?

Learning from paintings or seeing that side of art could be useful for a photographer.

4chan taught me everything I know

well not everything, Everything I learned about photography, I learned online and by taking pictures. Feedback from criticism heavy websites / people was how I learned. I've been on 4chan longer than I've been taking pictures so /p/ has been the majority of my feedback.

Forget the high school portrait studio, find a private run studio that you can volunteer / assist at, preferably ones that shoots models, you will learn much more about lighting and composition than "Sit in that chair, turn your head the left, *click* ok NEXT!"

2 high school classes and 4 in college so far for photography

If you include fine art training tack on another 9 classes or so

hm... I was saying, high school portrait studio is my only option for getting a photography teacher. I live in a very rural area (hence the chicken).

Also, I didn't mean that different media (like painting) give no useful incite for photography. More that my teacher wasn't qualified; she was an artist, and you can learn from artists, but she didn't really know how to give a structured lesson. I also took her oil painting class and this was still a problem. She got fired because many other students agreed with this.

This is why I'm looking for some kind of structured education specific to photography.

Picked up a camera, dicked around with it, read some articles on wiki about the terms used. Then it's all just personal experience from there.

I, like many others started here on /p/..

Didnt learn shit, except how to make great gearwhore threads. Then i went on to a more respectable site where you, believe it or not, can get real criticism and not just "omg best ever" or "sucks, fuck your nikon shit" and ive learnt everything i need to know from there.

I shot film for 4 years, the latter 2 I took 4 classes during. This being my 5th year I've finally gotten a dSLR. I've read a few books and posted on sites for critique and stuff as well as going out regularly and shooting with other people. I am also now working on a newspaper so I'm slowly getting better.

/p/ has some useful information, and opinions, but it seems like it has baseless standards to me (an uneducated peasant, hi). Just have to accept them, go shoot, and regurgitate photos based on those standards? You could say this is a reflection of the real world, except more honest (andor full of jerks) and without monetary obligations to each other.

anyway... what kind of books would you suggest for photojournalism?
