Hey /p/. I just got a Canon Rebel XSi for my birthday. This is my first DSLR and I was wondering where I should starts. What should I read to learn how to take the best pictures possible (other than the owners manual) and which lenses do you think I should pick up? Thanks.

How 'bout you learn the basics of taking a good photo before you get carried away with extra lenses. You only really need a single lens in most cases. Use your kit lens and start taking a bunch of pictures.

Learn some photography basics (knowing how your camera works is good enough). Then get out the fucking house, take as many pictures as possible. It's the only way anybody worth speaking of ever really learns. Also (with the exception of /p/) keep the hell away from photographic forums, they're all full of shit, failure and aids

Learn to take good photos with the lens you have (I've seen superb ones come off far older Canon kit lenses). Then start thinking about gear once you learn and hit its limitations first-hand.

This book is a good start. I'd reccomend it.

OP here. Yeah, I think I might just be excited when it comes to all of the lenses I COULD buy. I might not necessarily buy them right now. The 18-55 that came with the XSi seems to be great to far, so I don't see a need to get anything else, but I'm pretty sure the macro 100mm is the way I'm going to go when it comes time, since really close up pictures aren't looking incredibly sharp.

Pix or it never happened. How close up is "close up", anyway? MF or AF?
