dumb scenefags

I know this sounds like an exaggeration, but my friend there has been into the whole goth thing since we were in 5th grade. This was way before it was popular, or even heard of where we live. Also, please review photo itself, not the model.

The mistake was taking a picture of your lame ass friend
>> Anonymous
Not only is your friend lame, but your composition is lousy.
>> Anonymous
Okay, explain why composition is bad please... Seriously, I'd like a more in depth review. Was the smoke the problem? I thought it at least added a hint of originality to it.

you're a dumb scenefag for taking pictures of her
>> Anonymous
Ugh, why did I ever think I could get a decent critique on here? it's just like /b/. I'm far from a scenefag, I'm not anything like that... And if taking pictures of what is around me classifies me as one, then whatever. I take pictures of things and people I see, it's not my fault that a shitload of people are into goth and shit.
I just wanted a real critique

Honestly it's not that bad. At least it's somewhat interesting.

Composition wise, I'd prefer that he be in the right third of the photo, not the left.

okay, I'll give you a serious critique.

The composition isn't very good, the top of your subjects head is missing, and their hand is cut in half. The smoke lacks any real definition and doesn't add anything to the picture imo, I think it would look better with no smoke so that their face and cigarette were clearly visible. It still wouldn't be very good, though, there's too much else working against it. If youre dead set on using smoke, something like this is so much nicer to look at.

Thank you! You told me what was wrong, and gave me a suggestion. Is there an exact reason why it should be in the right third? I'm asking so I'll have a better idea later on. Or is just a matter of preference?

Preference and composition. (Not a word, I know)

He's facing and looking to the left, which draws your eyes that way...then the picture just ends which is jarring to the viewer. Your also left with a ton of negative space behind him. If you had framed him in the right hand portion, the space isn't wasted and possibly would have been filled in a little with the smoke.
>> Anonymous
Thank you too! I get what you mean about the smoke. Is cutting off the hand, etc. always something you should avoid? I honestly never even thought about the hand until you said that
>> Anonymous
Wow, that actually makes a lot of sense, thanks once again! I never thought about the way he was looking. I will next time!

with your picture, right would look better because they're facing left. It's not always true obviously, but it usually is better to put them on the side opposite the direction they're facing. Too close to the left and looking to the left you end up with an uncomfortable picture, the subject is so uncomfortable they're trying to walk out of the frame.
