Hey /p

this vivitar flash is completely manual, cheap and has some great writeups. vivitar is also a trusted brand, so im this close to purchasing one.

but tell me this. will it fuck around with the circuitry on my d80 and a d40x?(the d40x is the 'family' camera) or will it be safe to use

tldr; will this be safe on a d40x and d80?

why would you want a manual flash on a modern camera, you give up auto flash metering...

plus that things HUGE
>> eagle
how about this instead

>>a)why would you want a manual flash on a modern camera, you give up auto flash metering...

because it is simple and easy.

>>b)plus that things HUGE

it will look awesome with my sigma 50mm all the kids will be like

"no shit braaaaa"
>> eagle
>>249545
anon, this flash is so huge i would worry about it breaking its shoe when camera is vertical.
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>249543
ya know, you just keep making yourself look stupid every few posts...

You know, just because it's old, doesn't mean that it is good. Now I don't know anything about external flashes, but I hate when people orgasm or lenses or film cameras just because they are 20 years old. Digital doesn't automatically mean better or worse. (I'm not talking directly to you, you know.)

>>249546

it is sturdy and strong, plus i dont care how big it is if it works
>> eagle
>>249551
anon i have one in front of me, its not strong, the shoe is thin plastic and not reinforced, its a known weakness.

>>249550

shutup you faggot
the reason this is old, is because it has been successful. also it is for use with a modern digital camera, not for my leica or tryhard shit, just because it is a cheap reliable flash
>> eagle
>>249553
tell you what anon, since you have such a hardon for one ill sell you mine before it breaks. it even has the 28mm attachment
>> Anonymous
>>249552

will it snap? how long have you had it

ps, i sense lies
>> eagle
$80 shipped sound good?
>> eagle
>>249555
had it 2 months, makes the camera too top heavy for me. yes the shoe is quite brittle cheap plastic.

>>249557

why dont you read the op and answer the question you zionist cunt
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
idiots trolling idiots.

op, this flash is specifically designed to sync with new digital cameras. it's not an old flash, though it looks that way. it's been out for, what? 10 months?
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>249550
I agree, and the OP referring to Vivitar as a "trusted brand" was pretty humorous too, but Eagle's comment about manual flashes on 'modern' cameras was just too moronic.

Ignore Eagle, OP, they're known for weak shoe-mounts but if you don't abuse it it's not likely to break, he just likes to hype about everything, like that time he tried to sell a Leica MP on 4chan, and then spent his time telling everyone that they "couldn't afford" such a great camera.

Personally though, I think older manual flashes like these and the Sunpaks work best off-camera. Like Strobist or not, there's a reason so many of these are used for that purpose; they're cheap and easy to manipulate.

but it doesnt sync with the camera? or it does sync

you are such a fucking gearfag. gtfo of /p/.
>> eagle
>>249562
it will flash with the shutter at speeds the body is capable of. however you need to caculate distance and aperature manually
>> eagle
>>249566
so you are saying $80 shipped is not reasonable?
>> Anonymous
>>249567
yes, Eagle, that's generally what the word manual means.

gtfo /p eagle you champion faggot
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2

considering someone can get one new for around the same price, down to around $60 if they look hard enough, yeah trying to peddle your crap off on 4chan for at-retail value is pretty unreasonable.
>> eagle
>>249561
dear sage, i left that thread and someone trolled as me making me look stupid. i made about 2 replies... anyway i sold that on craigslist, but this flash stagnates there. no one has even spammed my email.
>> eagle
>>249572
oh shit i paid more than that.
sage, you must be good at finding deals
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>249574
A quick search on eBay pulled up one used for around $50 shipped, one new in box for $60, another new in box for $75, and a lot of used flashes varying in price from $10 (likely to go up a bit) to $35

And I'm not even trying, it's 2:30 am and I'm tired. Point is, paying $80 for a second-hand item that, at most, costs $90 first-hand isn't smart.

i think this was actually the original question, way to go /p/
>> Anonymous !EOS5DJQoBA
A 285HV will work on any modern camera without frying it. Just buy the damned thing and stop worrying.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>will it fuck around with the circuitry on my d80 and a d40x?(
Vivitar 285HV will work just fine.
Vivitar 285 will fuck your shit right up.

If you're buying new, you can only get the HV. If you're buying used, make sure you don't get the original 285.
>> Lynx !!KY+lVSl0s2m
great flash, dont worry about the foot, everyone in /p/ babies their gear anyways. I believe MPEX sells replacement feet. ALso, Sunpak 383 Super.
>> Anonymous
HV will not fry your shit, but requires you to have a brane, unlike the newb TTL/AF
>> Anonymous !EOS5Dv76E6

You don't even need much of a brain. As long as you can read strobist.com you'll be fine.

>>completely manual
No it's not.
The thyristor works very well. The colour is a little cool but not bad. This flash is great because it's cheap power. To get the light this puts out from canikon you're going to be spending at least twice. Trolls and strobist be damned, there's a reason the 283 and derivatives have been in production for 30 years.
