Hi /p/. I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi and a few lenses. But lately I have been wanting a Canon G9 as a sort of alternative, and to use it in more everyday situations instead of taking a DSLR around. Should I really spend 450 bucks on it?

Probably not.

Do you really need the hot shoe? If not, just get a PowerShot A630 or A650IS. Same sensor, same lens, hundreds of dollars less.

what the hell is with all the G9 threads lately...

dunno about the other threads

but the first thing i thought of after reading OP is some guy pretending to have a DSLR so we wouldn't tell him to get one so peeps would give him real recommendations

I understand what you're feeling, as I've been through that myself. Let me suggest you something instead of that:

Get a 50mm F1.8 prime. It's 100 bucks. You'll keep your XTi's awesomeness and turn it into a smaller, lighter package.

OR

If you're willing to spend 400 bucks, maybe grab a 28mm F1.8 USM prime instead.

If youre new to primes though, grab the 50mm F1.8 first. Primes do make for a very different experience.

i understand you got this from copypasta

but you have to realize it's pretty damn dated because that's a 3 year old camera and they don't make them anymore

the only new ones that are good are a650,720,590 and maybe 580

a sx100 is fine too

I wrote the copypasta.

I wrote the copypasta *last week*.

The A630 is still listed on Canon's site as a current model, and it's still available for purchase on sites like Adorama. And given that it costs half what the A650IS costs and gives you 90% of the features, I consider it a valid camera choice.

Op here, not copypasta. I have a 50mm f/1.4, so I don't need another prime right now.

It's just that I know I would want to take more pictures if I picked up a G9 because I just don't like taking a DSLR in most places. Maybe it's also because the G9 is basically a mini-dslr.

Whatever. I'm buying it.

The G9 and the A650IS have
1. The same lens (7.4-44.4 f/2.8-4.8 equivalent to a 35-210)
2. The same sensor (1/1.7" 12.4 megapixel)
3. The same controls

The A650 has a better LCD (it's got a tilt-swivel). The G9 has a hot shoe. They can both shoot RAW if you use CHDK on the A650.

Is the hot shoe worth the extra $150 plus the loss of the swivel screen?

The G9 is substantially thinner, though. Makes a difference when putting it into a pocket.

But the G9 is soooo sexy. Also, it has an iso dial.

ITT OP shouldnt have bought an SLR and finds a point and shoot better suited for his needs.

Point and shoots are great compliments for SLRs for casual shooting.
