As great as strobist is, high end studio photography is not the strong point of learning the 'strobist' way.
Using your brane to create good images is something that strobist is good at teaching.
However, digging deep into high wattage lighting setups with a high attention to detail is better learned at studio lighting sites like one light.

As far as the picture posted, the strobist way would be to do a diy softbox up high against a white wall and call it a day.
The way it was done was more likely with a large softbox above and several reflectors below, along with several striplights and barn-doored strobes hitting the background. You can see the striplights that are hitting the background reflected in his shoe.
One of the reasons that people like platon use reflectors on an image like this is to hide the reflections in the eyes. It is not uncommon for photographers of his calibre to place highlights in the eyes in specific places with specific shapes and hide the rest of the lighting from the eye highlights by bouncing light.
