Finding a good lens for the d40, is it as hard as it sounds?

Prime? Yes.
>>144173

You've got to admit, even most of the film cameras' viewfinders better than the d40's.

prime lenses are as easy to find for the d40 as they are for every other camera.. they won't autofocus, but that's the whole point of this thread, amirite?

and.. uh. the d40's viewfinder is scores worse than any film nikon.

Yeah. Darn it, if the d40 autofocuses, i would've just bought a 17-50mm f/2.8 tamron and a 50mm f/1.8

D40 is a bad investment any way you look at it.

d40 is a great camera FOR THE PRICE. i would definetly reccoment for a first dslr, the 18-55 is particularly good for a kit lens and especially compared to its peice of shit canon kit lens counterpart

Canon's 18-55 is certainly shit, and I've heard that Nikon's kit lens is better, but not like it's that much better a lens anyways.

If you want the 18-55 so bad, get it with a D80, not with a piece of shit waste of a camera like the D40 is.

wait for a D60, now that would be a real starter camera, not a big point and shoot like the D40
>> Anonymous
In before D60 still can't autofocus.

Confirmed, I stand corrected.
D60 still cant autofocus.
D80 or go Canon for cameras that work.

as a d40 owner with the 50mm 1.8: depends... if you have the time to focus it's not hard. it's somewhat trickyer if you're going to shoot moving targets, but manageable after a while (even though AF indeed is better)

When I manual focus on my S5700, it puts this dotted circle on the screen that is white. I have to hold the exposure button while rocking the zoom in or out. Then you watch the screen and wait for the circle to turn yellow which means the camera thinks you are focused. It's mad crazy cumbersome to use.

Except that
1. The focusing screen on a D40 doesn't actually show DoF shallower than f/2.5
2. The viewfinder on a D40 is wee tiny, so it's crazy difficult to figure out if you're in focus even if you're using an aperture small enough that there's some wiggle room.
3. These problems are multiplied in lower light, especially if your low-light vision has just been ruined by a flash or looking at a bright LCD screen.

i dont understand why they just dont put a split-prism screen in there, it would make focusing about a thousand times easier if you're not using AF

camera is automatically bigger

which is bad

How would that make it bigger?

Fits right where the old screen was. Ought to come standard, or as a factory option.
