What makes a good photographer? Anonymous !MjcMqTX/iM
Something's been bothering me for a while lately. A classmate went to Amsterdam lately, and put his 40D in burst mode, and kept shooting around whenever he saw something interesting happen. Out of all hundreds of pictures, there were some really nice ones. Pictures that are intrueging because pieces are missing, portraits that really tell a story, etcetera. This got a lot of praise, and our photography teacher was amazed and called him a great photographer quite a few times. And that was where it bothered me, we had a discussion, but the man always thinks he's the best, so discussion is not possible.
My point was: They are great pictures, but does that make a great photographer? I mean, there wasn't any thoughts on composition etcetera, what made the picture good were the persons on it, a lucky shot, so to say.
What do you think? Does this make for a good photographer, and if so, why?

Picture semi-related.

lol, i rate the teacher should be focusing on the pictures he took rather than himself... i like to view a creation as being seperate from the creator. it can stand on its own, as a seperate entity and of course the creator can be proud of it but never egotistical.

What does this have to do with the post? I was talking about the difference of good photos, and a good photographer.

I'm using the classmate as an example in this case, I'm just trying to get a discussion going on what makes the difference between good photo's, and a good photographer.

a good cook would be someone who you go can to and expect good food.

a good writer would be someone whos work you would expect to enjoy reading.

so a good photographer would be someone who you would expect to have good photographs.

its kind of like saying a portrait of yourself sucks just because theres lots of crummy random pictures of you, and this one just happens to be nice. or like not counting a touchdown because the dude who made it usually sucks and its the first time hes done anything helpful for the team.

What I'm saying is he's good enough to not show the tons of shitpix he also got.

What difference does it make? One doesn't exist without the other

It does if the content of the picture is the thing that makes the picture a good picture, like the picture of the waves that was posted a little while back on /p/
