Hello /p/, I'm planning on buying a new phone with camera. My first choice if k850i(pictured) since it has all the basic options for a digital camera with a 5mp lens.

The issues here are:

-Is the 5mp camera on the phone synonymous with other digital cameras or phones with camera in the market?

-Can the camera on the phone be used to take pictures albeit professionally like the ones in the market?

Other cameraphones, yes.
Proper digital cameras, no.

>Can the camera on the phone be used to take pictures albeit professionally like the ones in the market?
No. The quality is miserable when you don't shoot in bright light, there's no control over white balance and the near-infinite depth of field sucks for portraits or anythin else where you need an out-of-focus background. Plus it's SLOOOOW and has no optical zoom.

Anyone who considers buying a phone for photography is a complete moron. Please die.

While I agree that buying a phone to be your primary camera is made of fail, there's something to be said for having an emergency use last-resort camera on you at all times. E.g., when you're in a situation where you might be frisked for a camera but won't have any problem with a phone.

This is true, but I've found that a lot of people are becoming more aware of camera phones, and if they're serious about taking your camera( like in a moderately secure place), they'll be equally serious about taking the phone as well. Then again, you might be right about just getting the camera past someone if you quickly flash what looks like a phone and then pass by. They would frisk you for anything else, find nothing, and potentially let you go on your way.

In my experience, however, there was never enough light for these places to merit a camera like the one on my Samsung Sync, haha.

Actually, I've found myself hiding my point and shoot in insane places before... At a Bloc Party concert I either had to lose my camera or sneak by with it( and I wasn't about to lose something that I just bought for 200 dollars!), so I tied it to the back part of my jeans( where the belt would run through) and put it inside my pants, hanging. They frisked( fortunately didn't check my back side too much) and told me to go ahead. I think at the time my planned explanation for something being felt was "you made me nervous and I took a poop..."

Yeah, I wasn't thinking places like the Department of Defense so much as places like stores in the mall with posted "No photography" signs, movie theaters, etc. Or places that I just don't feel comfortable bringing $200 worth of P&S, much less my kilobuck-plus digital SLR outfit.

Heh, good point. For those places I just make sure to be quick and keep the camera out of sight unless I'm taking the picture. Also, turning off flash helps JUST A BIT, hahaha.

I've got nothing against my cell phone camera( it managed to take incredible pictures in Europe when I left my only devoted camera on a train platform in Austria), but in hindsight I would have just taken better care not to leave that thing on platform 1 than put any stock in the camera phone itself.

Also, it's not just the department of defense! The embassy also looks down on people with a bunch of electronics, hahaha.

Pic related. I'd say that was the best my poor little Sync could do on a sunny day in Florence, Italy. Everything else looks... murky, at best, downright awful at worst.

i just got this phone recently and honestly, cellphone cameras are still absolute shit. i wuldnt use any cellphone for proper photographs at all. they're very good for portability and convenience but thats about it right now.

The good thing tho about the 5MP sensor on the phone isnt that the quality is better(in fact i think it might've digressed from the previous models), but you can size it down which reducest he noise and quality issues nicely.

as a phone its very awkward to use, and mine is greasy as shit cuz of the glossy material they used on it. i think its the biggest disappointment from sony ericsson yet. not that the phone is bad, but you'd expect so much more.

i think u should consider the Samsung G800 rather, cuz its got optical zoom and who knows, it could actually take decent pics.

Yeah. As I said before, the photo I posted was the best my *Samsung Sync* could do( my cell phone camera). I would have probably had a clearer shot with a regular point and shoot, especially since I could have held it steadier than my cell phone in low-light.
