hey /p/

I'm trying to decide what lens to get for my 400D / XTi. At the moment I've got the 50mm f/1.8 and the stock lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 EF-S), and I'll be getting an unrelated 55-250mm EF-S (f/4-5.6) shortly too.

My budget doesn't extend to the 17-55mm f/2.8.

I'm going on a one-month trip to Mongolia shortly so a lens that'd be useful there would be neat. I'm looking for something to replace my current stock lens as my walkabout lens because it's pretty crappy.

The two lenses I'm mostly looking at are the £160 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS EF-S, which is basically the same as mine but with IS and slightly better optics, and the £330 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS EF-S, which has 30mm more telephoto and but costs over twice as much. I'm not sure if it's much better quality than the 18-55 IS, either, or how useful the 30mm will be (that's the key factor really).

I'm also open to other suggestions, but I prefer Canon glass to other brands mainly due to a bad experience with a certain Sigma 55-200 that refuses to work with the 400D.
Still, if there are any great suggestions from other brands, I'll certainly look into them.

Pic unrelated since it was shot through my telescope and not a lens at all.

I tend to photograph a lot of things I've made, electronics-wise, so something with a fairly short min. focusing range would be neat. A macro lens would be useful, no doubt, but I don't think it'd be versatile enough for other stuff.

I've also got this one-month trip to Mongolia where I suspect I'll be shooting people, landscapes, markets, animals etc, but mostly outdoors so light hopefully won't be an issue.

I don't shoot sports, not much wildlife, not many portraits (but the 50mm is perfect for portraits anyway), and no architectural at the moment.

You can get that lens for £109: http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod597.html

The 18-55 IS model is far better and more flexible than the old non-IS kit lens one. It is worth the money. If you get it then for the money you would save over the 17-85 you could get the 55-250 as well, which is also a very good one. Better than the 18-55 IS in many ways although the focal lengths and uses are completely different so they do not compete.

Dunno about worth $320, but it was worth the ~$200 I paid for it. Blackadder seems to have found you a cheaper source, though.

>I tend to photograph a lot of things I've made, electronics-wise, so something with a fairly short min. focusing range would be neat.
The 18-55 IS focuses a bit more closely than the regular 18-55 II. I think it might even be a better macro than the 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, in fact. Focuses almost as close and gives you an extra 5mm at the far end.

(I could be totally wrong about that, though)

Wow, that's what I get for looking at Amazon.

I can certainly see the 18-55 + 55-250 being more useful than the one 17-85, the only issue being that they're two lenses, with all the weight and size and swapping them over issues that involves.

When I can get the 18-55 for a third of the price of the 17-85 though it really calls into question how much the extra 30mm is worth.

Does anyone have any other lens suggestions? It looks like the 18-55 is definitely going to be a winner over the 17-85, but I don't know if perhaps some others would be even better.

In case I wasn't clear in the first post, I will definitely be getting the 55-250 anyway, since a friend is getting it for a safari trip and taking my camera, and I get the lens afterwards (don't ask).

I was looking at the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro, which is apparently really sharp and falls between the two other lenses in terms of price (£240 or $480 odd).

However, I don't think I really want a lens that'l only perform well with macro - the 50mm already is good enough for that, and I'd rather have more of a general use lens.

Always check that site I linked to if you are in the UK. It's a great resource for not only seeing what the prices are, but if they are going up or down over time. It's saved me a lot of money.

That extra 30mm wouldn't be enough for me, but YMMV. Photozone didn't feel it could compete with the new 18-55 IS any more: http://tinyurl.com/5z5bj6

The weight won't be a problem with the 18-55 IS and the 55-250 as they are very light, some of the lightest zooms around. The 17-85 weighs 475g and the 18-55 IS plus the 55-250IS together weighs 590g. Not a great deal of difference.

The 17-85 has some advantages and if you read the reviews and look at the build of them you cans see it, but whether or not it is worth you spending all the extra money on it when it could go towards another lens or saving up for a 17-55 2.8 is another matter.

I've got the 60mm macro. Cracking lens. It'll do great macros and work well for portraits too. It still works well as a 60mm lens for general work. If you want highly detailed and sharp close ups then it is an ideal choice.

The 18-55 brings you to what, 1:4 at best. The 50mm 2.5 gets you to 1:2 and 1:1 with adapter.

Guess I was completely wrong about that, then.

Still, focuses closer than most non-macro lenses I've looked at.

Just Googled, it gets to 1:3.

I would say the obsessive fanboy is the person who keeps track of the prices and specifications of the other guy's lenses so they know how much "better" their own system is.

Most of you, whether you be a Nikon fanboy or Canon fanboy, are probably brand new to photography and have only ever owned one fucking camera. Once you've been around a while, you'll realize how fucking stupid you were and just use the camera you like without trying to convert everybody else on the goddamn planet. Or better yet, you'll lose interest and quit photography. I recommend the latter, it's better for everybody.

>>165398Also, you don't use a crop lens on a full frame. Nikons won't either, unless they're into hardcore vignetting, so your argument doesnt work.

lol

learn about how things work before you open your mouth

you can use DX on a D3 with NO vignetting

When starting to buy into a DSLR system, it's important to do some research and figure out which system is ideal for one's needs. That can involve both specifications, and money one expects to pay for a product or another.

Maybe an obsessive fanboy will keep track of prices, but you dont need to do much research to figure out that Nikon generally sell their gear for a higher price than Canon; there is plenty of evidence, it isn't a secret.

>>165401No, retard. Plenty more but you are such a pathetic fanboy you won't open your eyes.

please post them then

nikon consumer crop zooms are cheaper, better and there are more of them

Get your facts straight before opening your pie hole. DX lenses generate a smaller image circle. The D3 has an option to go into "crop mode" by only using the pixels within the area on the full frame sensor that would be equivalent to a DX sensor. If used on normal mode, it generates the picture within a black circle, also called vignetting.

if you knew then why argue

FACT, DX works on D3

FACT, EF-S doesn't work on full frame

why did you have to argue
>> Anonymous
>>165437
If you're buying into a system based on the quality of the kit lens, there's only one reasonable option.

Because you're enhancing the truth. Both of those are true.

But it's also true that the D3 only does it by sacrificing a big part of the image. It's also true that any other full frame is capable of using crop or DX-like lenses. Only the EF-S lens build doesnt allow it.

Problem solved.

End of story here?

Jesus Christ.

Both of you faggots shut the hell up. The world doesn't need another shitty Nikon vs. Canon flamewar.

this is why I wish my telescope had autofocus (or at least a fine focus adjustment control).

It's effectively a 2000mm lens (taking into account 1.6x crop factor) but can't focus for shit or it'd probably look awesome.
I can even take photos of saturn with it though, so that's something.

(even if they suck hard).
