Hey there /p/!

My father wants to get me a digital SLR for a Christmas present, and we're going in a couple of days to get one. I figured walking right into a camera store and having one picked out for me by someone working there would probably be against my best interests, so I'm hoping you guys will be able to help me.

Relevant information:
-Price range of $850-$1000 USD.
-I'm just starting to get into photography.
-That said, I'm pretty smart and love to figure things out so I'm not afraid to get a camera that would be considered above my level. I actually learn best from trials by fire, so to speak.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Pentax k10D - superiour under $999 camera
Pentax k100D is superiour value for money
Pentax k110D costs virtually nothing and is missing the shake reduction that the 10D and 100D have.

Thanks. From what I've read so far I think I'm going to get the k10D.

Err... let's make that the 400D, which is both cheaper and better (if only slightly). Signed, the happy owner of a 350D.

Just don't buy the kit-lens. If you want a lens with similar specifications, get a Sigma 17-70. It's better value-for-money. Just be aware that it's an EF-S lens. But really, try to get an idea for what kind of picture you want to make, and decide for yourself what lens you want. This is a good test site to figure out what to avoid:

Personally, I'm very satisfied with my Sigma 17-70mm and 30mm prime. Then again, I don't expect to upgrade to a full-frame digital SLR anytime soon.

Also, you can have a fantastic body (harhar, I mean the camera), if you have shitty lenses that's worth nothing. Be sure to get decent ones from the start!

Dont get the pentax. I mean, sure they have some nifty features, but with Canon or Nikon, you get about 30+ years of old equipment at your disposal, and many more options. Have you ever seen any pro shoot with something like a Sony, HP, or Pentax? No

Of course you could state, "I'm just beginning", however, even then, its a wiser investment to purchase either something like the new Canon Digital Rebel, or a Nikon D70/D50. Since once, and if you, develop a love for photography, you dont have to switch camera bodies to get all the goodies such as old awesome prime lenses, better flash support, new upcoming lenses. Your lenses make much more difference then your camera body(to a moderate degree, since we are comparing entry level DSLR, not a Nikon EM to the Canon MarkII).

If you do get the Digital Rebel or something, I agree with the other commenter, do not get the kit lense. Just spend a bit more money to get a better one separately.

you get about 40 years worth of equipment at your disposal with pentax.
Although I think it's a silly point to bring up, I've seen many pros shoot with pentax gear. In 35mm and 6x7.
At the same time, who knows what's going to happen to Pentax' camera division after Hoya is through gobbling them up... :/

Can't go wrong with either Nikon or Canon.

Got the camera with a 18-70 lens and took a few hundred pictures of things around the house. The one posted is most relevant.

Thanks for all the input. I have a couple of weeks for a full refund if I don't like it, but I've enjoyed it quite a bit so far. I've probably taken 2 dozen of just a post that part of a flight of stairs.

Sorry, I didn't think it would be a problem since Firefox scales down pictures automatically anyways. But I do know how!

dude i would have sold you my 18-70mm for a helluva alot cheaper since i never use it anymore due to my purcahse of the 18-200mm... oh well

spoiler: k10D works with any pentax lens ever made, and has SR ( IS / VR ) with all lens that will fit on it.

the 400D / XTi is very popular, as its so cheap...but its also a little plastic toy.

The Nikon D80 Is a much much better camera - but it has no SR and you need to buy VR lens ( enjoy your money, it will be gone soon if your buying lots of those )

Listening to this obvious fanboy is not the smartest thing to do..

Every entry-level camera is a cheap piece of plastic. Whilst as a 350D owner I can admit the same to the 400D, so is the Nikon D80..

And seriously, I really don't understand all this idiotic fascination with the Pentax stuff. Sure, it's got great cheap old lenses, some of great quality, but newer (read: fast in terms of operation, convenient, come with a guarantee etc) lenses are practically nonexistent.. Plus pretty much every kid who has held more than one type of IS (or VR/whatever you want to call it) knows that lens stabilisation (IS/VR) beats the shit out of the crap the Sony a100 and some Pentax cameras use.

Go try taking a picture with.. say, the f/4.0L EF 24-105mm IS USM lens and then a Pentax equivalent. You'll understand why only Canon and Nikon cameras are used (or even better medium format cameras, which is a whole different topic) by pros.
>>33258
Lol, fanboy lies.

Anyway, in terms of build quality, the only cheaper alternative is the D70s.. Everything else (_especially the new D40, THAT's horrible) is, as said, a piece of plastic. But still, those pieces of plastic have almost twice the resolution of the D70s, which is around 1.5 generations old.

hrm

many pros shoot pentax, just that most of them shoot canon or nikon. Do you know why?

1DsmkII and Nikon D2X are LEET bodys.

Pentax only have the K10D, which is a different target market.

good to see ive stired up some canon fanboys too.

If you want to pay a crap load of money for all your L-IS glass. Thats fine, if your a professional and make a living off your photos.

If your like the OP, and just take photos for fun, then in body IS is the way to go...why? becouse its much cheaper and works on all your glass. I wont go into if its better or not, as that will be a whole new flame war.

Also, please show me some canon glass that is better than the pentax limiteds

___

Pretty much, what you have done is get your feathers in a twist and get upset that we are not all wanking over canon.

You yourself accepted there entry level DSLRs are not that great.

I will also aceept that Canons 5D and 1D are awesome...but thats not the point of this thread.

i own both you fags.

My hasselblad glass on my H3 is so much better than any canon, nikon, or pentax rubbish
