One more thread about new camera^^ Guu
Hey /p.
Been lurking around the internet to find a nice camera to begin with.I have already taken some pictures with my dad old camera and now i want one for myself. No money for DSLR though so I settled for a bridge to learn the basics.
So what does /p thinks of the PANASONIC Lumix DMC-FZ50? Read nothing but good reviews but I just want to be sure before putting 500€ into it [eurofag here^^]. Or is there some better camera i haven't heard of for the same range of prices?

What sort of photographs do you want to take with it?
>> MaybeAnonymous
I own one of those.

It's pretty good for an all-round camera, with 35-420mm zoom and 2.8~3.7 aperture.

Don't expect much sharpness at high ISO's on 100% crop though, it's a bitch, but in the daytime you can work around it easily.

Also: size and weight are good, tho it feels small (like Canon 350D-ish), but it weighs close to nothing.
My D50 with 35-70 attached is heavier, let alone the 500mm.

Fuck why do i keep remembering stuff i want to say when i already posted...

ANYWAY, long post.

The FZ50 has a great amount of settings, works smoother than the 350D in my opinion, easy to follow, and even has a really great Manual setting. As for the handling: The 2 control dials for shutter and aperture are adorable, works like a charm, also for sooming and flipping through photos on the LCD when reviewing. If you want to bridge the gap between compact and dSLR, this is your cam. Massive amounts of zoom at reasonable quality, keep in mind theres like 12800000 glass elements in there, works like a charm and offers unlimited pleasure. Now I'm not saying theres no downsides to this thing..
For one, the ISO at 400+ is pretty much rubbish, but since youre working with 10MP thats correctable to a certain degree. Also: the viewfinder is electronic, so you have no mirror to look through. Theoretically, this gives a SLIGHT delay in image movement, but in practice, its close to zero.

More Pro's:
- Great Image Stabilizer.
- 10MP is more, WAY more than you need, allows some cropping.
- Fast and easy handling makes it exellent.

€500 might seem much, but it's worth it.

TL;DR: Bridge gap, go for it, value for money, etc.

thanks a lot, confirms what I had read.
The pentax looks nice but 600€ naked, I dont have this kind of money :s
As for what i'd like to take, I'm a huge fan of urban landscape so i think that what I'll do first. Maybe some light work too, even though you tell me it aint that good at high iso : I also like daily life scene but i'm the kind that's too shy to take those :p

If you get the FZ50, shoot in raw and use something like adobe camera raw/lightroom to process the files. Panasonic's default firmware is absolutely horrible at reducing noise without making the pictures look shitty.

>No money for DSLR though
You can get D40 for 500 euros.
>> Anonymous
That thing is 397,- in euroland.
I'd rather get a cheap dslr tho.

Hey man just save a little more for a real dslr. get a used one if you must. unless you want that 300mm equivelent zoom. i own a fx-10 and though its nice to learn on its still no where as nice as a slr. either pay that little extra for a entry level slr or save money by getting a cheaper camera.

IMHO

OP Here,
500€ is he price with the bag to carry it around and a decent sd memory card [default=32mo -___-]
I wondered a long time whether to get a really good bridge or a cheap dslr. I don't really know how much time it'll take to want to upgrade to a dslr but I sure don't have the money for lens and stuff [and i know myself, once i get into something, I tend to forget the budget] I'll just sell it or keep it for other use after.
Thanks /p/ for the advice. I'll post pics as soon as I get it and manage to take decent pictures^^

QFT. I have an FZ8. The JPEGs look horrible, the raws are perfect at ISO 100 and 200.

Can you not order from calumet? D40s seem cheap there.

FZ50 sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks
at any sensitivity higher than 100.

If you need a big zoom range, get some discounted/used olympus DSLR with 2 kit lenses. It will be cheaper AND way better.
