I'm looking to purchase a brand spankin' new digital SLR camera. Nikon or canon. What do you think is the best for an entry level photographer. I'm looking to take some classes at the U of I so I thought it might be nice to start... training now. Any suggestsions are great. Preferably under 800...

Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Sony, bla bla bla
its the same story as always...
go to your store, and play with them. they are all about the same in features and quality, the real issue is how they feel in your hand.
at the end of the day you can buy the best camera on paper but feel like your holding cinder block.
surely we can spend all day saying how brand A is better than brand B in this area but brand C is better because of X reason.

my advice is to do some simple research and most importantly have a GOOD play with the ones your interested in.

happy shopping (i wish i can afford a new camera)

Yeah, you really can't go too far wrong with pretty much any DSLR. I'm a bit hesitant to recommend Sony because I don't know much about their lens lineup, and because they're Sony, but otherwise just try them all out and see what you like.

Personally, having used Nikon all my life, I find Canon ergonomics and button placement to be a little odd, so I prefer Nikons. My D70s feels pretty much perfect in my hand.

Stay with one of the big boys, canon, Pentax, Nikon, Olympus or even Minolta if your feeling lucky.

Being able to get lenses for your camera after 5 years is nice.

Also, avoid reduced coverage "digital" lenses. They suck becuase you have to ditch them if you upgrade or go film for backup/whatever.

Thanks for the help. I'll be sure to check 'em out. My sister has a Nikon and I really like it. Takes a little bit to get used to but it's nice. I have a canon powershot SD600 right now (THat's what I took the first picture with... just snaped in front of my friends house). I'll have to get my hands on some of the camera's I've been looking at. Thanks again. Anymore help is great. haha
