Halp, /p/!
I got stuck having to take pictures for the end of season volleyball tournament. I've done it before but I've never been satisfied with my work, have no idea how to set myself up for a good shot in volleyball.
I have a Nikon D40, 18-55, 55-200, 50 1.4, and a SB-24 flash.
Which lens should I use, where should I take shots from, and how do I find the right moment?
In return, HR spandex ass.

Frankly you don't have anything long enough or fast enough to shoot volleyball.

What I figured. Okay if they don't turn out spectacular, it's just for a high school yearbook. I just don't want them to be utter fucking shit.
One thing that may be in my favor is that the game will start at 10-11 when the sun will be brightest. I could have borrowed a fuji S3 and a sigma 28-300 but AF was slow as shit.
Is there at least a place that I can stand in hopes of getting something interesting?

there was something about shooting volleyball not long ago. Try standing near the net, kinda low and catch a few spikes. Just behnd the touchlines and a good zoom may well yield some from behind camel toes.

it was me.

indoor volleyball with a consumer 4.5-5.6 zoom is no fun :(

only semi-decent shot of the whole ordeal.

if OP is shooting outside, just use the flash for fill and look at volleyball pictures from the Olympics and try and imitate those. Sports photography is pretty much cookie cutter.
>> Anonymous
im suddenly getting quite into wimminz volleyball.

>look at volleyball pictures from the Olympics and try and imitate those
what the ones taken with huge fuck off, ultra fast tele lenses?? that'll be fun with what OP has.

Just shoot some nice bums and post them here.

>>272600

if OP is outside in bright sun with a fill flash his consumer zoom will be fine assuming he bumps up the iso some. and 200 on 1.5x crop becomes a 300. OP can probably get on the lines of the court so he should be fine

Would, but through some stroke of faggotry I got stuck in guy's volleyball.. Unless you're into that kind of thing.
Picture is the best I've been able to come up with.

Indoor. I'm not sure about the lighting, the last time I went there was when I was going to enroll in kindergarten but come to think of it there's probably no natural light at all. Players don't mind the flash.
I'm going to be able to walk anywhere that doesn't obstruct the playing. Two days ago I took a few shots from the post and under the net. Just didn't come out right though.

college fag here.

they wouldn't let me use flash indoor for safety purposes. if it's an official match it might be iffy if you can use flash.
>> Mutt !!mIF4ZkWn+B/
>>272612
In that case if I can't use a flash and they don't come out nicely then I'll just recycle old pictures.

oh shit, not some epilepsy bollocks?? remember was doing some music night and the only light we had that was worth a shit was a strobe. Was supposed to have it on for 30 seconds every three minutes or something liek that.
was pretty much on all night.
>> Anonymous !!HFcgQCUv033
>>272614

they didn't give a reason. probably not epilepsy so much just as if you get hit with a flash at full power (i have the 56AM) it leaves spots on your retinas for at least a few seconds. if you can't see the ball cause you have a giant red/green spot in your vision that's not going ot be very fair.... ;_;

Gymnasium lighting often sucks. Just thought you should know. You would probably need 2.8 and I'm not too sure if that would even get rid of motion blur.

that the sigma 70-300... while is okay in daylight, sucks in gym lighting.

plus onboard flash can only do so much...

pic related.. 70mm end of the 70-300 f4.5-5.6

you need a 2.8 telezoom, id recommend the 80-200 AFD OH RIGHT YOUR SHIT BODY CANT AF IT

uhhh that leaves you with the 80-200 AF-S (impossible to find) or the 70-200 VR (impossible to afford)

The particular court I shot at had a glass wall on one side so I only had to do some fill flash when shooting from the other side and occasionally when backlighting was too much.
The game was boring as fuck so I hopped on a taxi across town to go and fully-cover the soccer tournament after I filled my quota.

Go,go, Sigma 70-200 HSM!
>>
>>272610

it's not THAT bad... I've seen plenty worse.

best suggestion I have is to just focus on one of the players at a time, otherwise you have a larger chance at getting small imperfections/blur with those lenses and shutter speeds.

get some shots at the serving line, with or without the ball in the frame.

get some from the net area, but don't get too close or the referee will get pissed.

use the 55-200, no flash. heavyweather was right in saying you don't have anything long enough or fast enough for this sport though. hell, those aren't even good enough for curling...
