Pop-up flash diffuser.

Potentially useful, or totally retarded?

>> Anonymous
if i saw one in a store for like.. $2.50 i would buy it to be honest

i do have an external flash and diffsuer but sometimes i don't have it with me and wish the built-in one could be diffused

i use a piece of paper if i have one but yeah.. i'd buy it for $2.50
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
useful? definately. Worth buying? not really. It's not like a diffuser is that hard to make.

I have a little bouncer/diffuser combo box that I made out of foamcore and a sheet of wax paper that works just fine and took like 2 minutes to make.
>> Anonymous
>>185054

Post pix plz. I love DIY projects.
Also some people complain about this dimming the flash too much.
Seems like wax paper or muslin would work better.
>> Anonymous
>Cons: Limited range, works great up to 3ft, (portrait shots) but after that, you have to take it off, or else your photos will look underexposed.
>> Anonymous
>>185054

well yeah.. depends on how much you value your time and the material you used

$2.50? fuck yeah i'd buy it and leave it in my camera bag

any more than that or shipping fees, fuck it
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>185062
I don't have any pictures of it and don't know where I placed it last. It's basically a little box of white foamcore (black on the outside) with a 45 degree slant at the top and wax paper attached to that. It's obviously not super-strong but it looks far better than a pop-up direct.

It's $5.85 with free shipping, and collapsable...
Too much?

go right ahead, might as well

just cut a paper cup in half and tape it on.
>> Jesus !1EQ.kCAg9c
>>185077
If you don't have any alternatives, sure go for it. Otherwise I probably wouldn't.
>> des
On-board flashes are weak as it is, a gobo is just going to cut it further
>> Anonymous
>>185045
This thing is a piece of shit and WILL break with any amount of regular use taking it on and off. Skip it.
>> Anonymous
Make your own. Paper taped on works well; when I've not been expecting to use a flash but I end up doing so I just pop the thing and hold a dollar bill over it.

(Can anyone beat that for ghetto flash accessories?)

>>185068
>or else your photos will look underexposed.

Then you change your exposure. It's not a difficult concept. Saying that is like saying if you stick an ND filter over your lens your photographs will look underexposed.

The best DIY popup diffuser is made from a film canister. Buy a roll of Fuji film and then shoot it (or throw it away, but don't do this). The film canister is a translucent white, perfect for the purpose. Take off the cap, cut a slit lengthways down the canister but leaving a cm at the end, and make it wide enough to slip across your flash. Then when you put it on, you can cap the canister so it doesn't fall off if you've cut it just right.
>> Anonymous
>>185389
But their canisters are a bit too opaque. Can anyone confirm this?

Do you mean something like this?
I'm sure I have an old opaque film canister laying around somewhere. $5.85 isn't bad, but the film canister idea sounds worth a shot.

Too bad this totally fails.
You'd be a hell of a lot better off just saving $400 and buying the ABR800.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.

Yep, perfect. You gotta cut the slit to just the right width though.

You need a translucent canister.
An opaque one would block all light.

You're doing it wrong. The canister should go across the flash, forming a T-shape. As it is, it doesn't look too steady. It also probably lets through too much light.

It's somewhere down there and my flash is a bit too fat for it to hold.

I'll try it again with the whiter canisters.
>> Anonymous

Did it again. Used a more opaque canister and thinner strips to make it fit snug.

I'm fairly satisfied with this.

Considering his external flash does not swivel or tilt, it's still better than firing it front on.

Unless you want to be like beethy and fire an external flash that swivels and tilt front on anyway for massive WIN.

Notice the brand and model. It was part of the A-1 set my dad passed on to me. It's like 27 years old by now. I'll be stuck making the best of it until I can save up for an SB-600.

This pic's rather ironic too cause I believe Canon's dSLR's are better than Nikon dSLR's while Nikon film SLR's are better than Canon's film SLR's.

...what?

Why not just get a Vivitar 285HV?
Costs less than 1/2 the price of the SB600 and is just as useful.
>> Anonymous
>>186412

Vivitar 285HV: $90
Nikon SB-600: $185

You're missing:

Swivel head: $25
Wireless capabilities: $25
ITTL: $25

Arbitrary values. That brings you up to $165 already.

If you do not need those features, by all means, by a 285HV. But don't dismiss the extra features.

>>186412
The Vivitar doesn't include TTL - which OP may be looking for? Or then again, he could just be a brand-fag.
>> Anonymous
>>186416
TTL is for pussies.

Get a fucking $10 hot shoe cord to get the flash off the camera and then you can do anything the SB600 can.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s

put it on tripods with umbrellas and fire 3 at once at various positions around a studio?

WHILST MOVING.
>> Anonymous
My SB-600 totally owns my Vivitar 285HV. The Vivitar is decent, but the build quality sucks, it recycles slower, there's no display so it's difficult to see what power it is set to when in a dark place etc. Using it off camera fully manually is awesome though.

What about an SB-26 or something like that? Cheap as hell and almost as awesome as an SB-600.
>> Anonymous
Anyone got suggestions for cheap flashes for Pentax?

I'm getting an AF360 but would like some cheap flashes for fill and whatnot...
>> VF-19
>>186461

You could just get any flash with a slave mode and that has the power output you want. Nice and simple.
>> Anonymous
>>186448Get a fucking $10 hot shoe cord to get the flash off the camera and then you can do anything the SB600 can.

Wait, what? A $10 cord turns your fully manual flash into an automatic one?

WHO KNEW?
>> Anonymous
The only things I see the SB-600 lacking compared to the SB-800 are $125 extra cost, a built-in bounce card (just use an index card and tape), no free flimsy light balancing filters (I use Roscoe gels and Velcro instead), no ability to point down 7 degrees from horizontal, no free Tupperware soft dome (you can buy one here for $17 if you want it for the SB-600), no non-TTL A mode for use with 1950s cameras (use Manual instead) and no repeating strobe mode or modeling light and I think no ability to use the many external battery packs favored by wedding shooters. I never use these things so I'd rather have a smaller flash and money in my pocket. I also think I see no jacks for the remote cords, which I never use. That's the beauty of this: slave mode is built in for free.
>> Anonymous
>>186468

If you can't handle a manual flash then you'd best turn your camera in for a fucking Powershot, son.
