It has ISO 25,600 but anyone that says "no grain" is quite wrong.

noise performance is certainly very good, but there is moise and there is sgnificant banding. Of course, we're being troll'd but somebody's gonne tell em.

anyone who uses that high of an iso would be just be silly anyway. It's there as a selling point, not as a practical tool.

I like the D300 better:

-At least for me, better field-of-views available with available primes. 28mm is the perfect, diagonal normal for a DX sensor, etc.
-Less bulky body.
-Otherwise effectively identical feature set.

A little more noise is worth that. Add sensor-shift stabilization for lenses that aren't optically stabilized to the D300, and there's pretty much the perfect DSLR.

It's only three stops from 3200. Ever been shooting wide open at 3200 and wished that you could have a little DoF?

hahahah what are you kidding me? i use a D70s... i don't shoot above 400 unless i intend to convert to B&W... the noise on that camera is remarkable :D

I'll agree with that. The D300 is arguably an APS-C D3.

But obviously if you want 35mm equiv you go D3 otherwise D300.

I can grab a D300 for about 2000 Australian dollars... it's so fuckin tempting since i've got the money to spare... but i still want to hold out for a smaller D3.

But i'm gonna spend the money on a LF camera instead me thinks since nikon still doesn't have an lower rung FX camera.

Of course it doesn't have grain, it's not a film camera.

Noise, on the other hand, it's got noise aplenty at 25,600.

Sometimes. But more often I'm shooting wide open and just wish I had more light.

The D3 and 1Ds Mark III each have their advantages over each other.

god I want one...if I only won the lottery...

We got one of those delivered in work the other day; fantastic fun! Such a heavy camera, though >.< It made me want to upgrade to the D300, however, even though I never thought about it before...
