Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 Di is really sharp and not very expensive.
Pic quite related.

Extreem fast shutter speed!

Cool shot tho, is that crap on the left from your sensor or from the real world?

Yeah, it's an amazing lens. Quite short, though, but it's well worth the price and it is also great for portraits.

Thanks!
Dirty sensor, but it's cleaned now.

I've used the Tamron 90mm macro on a D80 and it's very nice. The thing with macro lenses is that they are all very good. I have yet to see a truly bad macro lens. Some can be a touch better here and there, but it's small differences for the most part. Get a focal length that suits your needs. Yes, some are better (and more expensive) than others, but they all tend to suffer from the same faults and have the same sort of positives that macro lenses have.

I remember someone saying once that the reason that the macro lenses are all good while other lenses can range greatly is that there is no incentive for the companies to produce bad and cheap ones. A novice might want to buy a big zoom to go with his big ego and how he imagines his big dick, but few photographers will leap to buying a specialist macro lens as an ego thing to make themselves look cool and to take pictures of their tiny penis.

An interesting explanation, I thought.

Macro lens that extends? Fail.

For comparison purposes, what's another macro lens /p/ recommends to use with a D80? I'm planning on getting a D80 soon, I shoot mostly nature, and I LOVE taking macro shots.

Nikon 105mm f2.8 Af-S VR
for almost 3x the price
or Nikon 55mm f2.8 Micro

Seconding the 60mm. Working distance is a little short for insects, but it's definitely value for your money.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
or the Nikkor ED AF Mircro 70-180mm f/4.5-5.6 D
for extra win :D
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ

extra rare, you mean. i think you and three japanese guys are the only photographers to own them in the entire world.

and i'm super, super jealous. i'm just willing to bet that you've got a 58 1.2 nikkor noct hidden away somewhere.

60mm is not too bad. As long as you're not going for super-sensitive subjects like dragonflies it is usable. I know for dragonflies that people tend to prefer much longer macro lenses like 150 or 180.

The advantage of the longer ones is it does give you a little more breathing room and the background can look more pleasing at times. Of course with that is a longer working distance and larger lens, with all the problems for hand holding that come with it.

better to get a proper macro FFL lens than some jack of all trades zoom.

i got mine when i was in the UAE, similar price to the 70-200mm f/2.8 vr T_T
but actually, i never regretted buying it!

yeah, you can buy a 3rd party macrolens. virtually any macro lens is sharp

>>116123
macro zoomlens, do not want. might be useful for some scientifical applications, but generally you want a prime for maximal sharpness

I own a nikkor 55mm f/3.5 macro lens. focal length is a bit short for bugs, but it also makes a nice portrait lens.

photo related, took it yesterday. around 100mm of extension tubes on the lens, this is where the lens is getting outresolved

Taken with my Zoom macro (take note, this is the only zoom true macro lens of its kind)
Of a fine cotton sock.

Also, extension tubes (and bellows of you really want) are essential for macro photography.
