That's prettier than the F with the giant block prism to be sure, but it doesn't compare to the SP. The spotmatic's prism housing is a much more pleasing shape, the lens mount is ROUND to match the ROUND LENS, it doesn't have a pair of random screws in the front, the font and kerning are better and more elegant, and it doesn't have warts on the front.

Optically or functionally there's a fine debate between old SLRs, but there's no question that the Spotmatic is aesthetically the best-resolved and most thought out. It's just nice to look at.
>> Anonymous
SL MOT guy here - I am not talking about looks- although the SL MOT with its motor attached is a pretty interesting sight - i'm talking about function/quality.
>> Anonymous
>>252909

What random screws?
>> Anonymous
>>252911

Yeah i figured you didn't mean solely the looks, but i've never heard of any of the Leica SLR series getting too much use so i've no clue about how their 'functionality' is.
>> Anonymous

This is the only path.

The Leica R series SLRs aren't famous for anything, really, but the Leicaflex series is considered to be the best 35mm (manual) ever built.
>> Anonymous
>>252909
I happen to like the boxy prism, at least the one on the F2.

While the Spotmatic is attractive, I find its edges to be too rounded. Also, it doesn't have nearly as much weight to it as the Nikons.

But eh, it's a moot point.
>> Anonymous
>>252912
The little rivet/screw/bolt things holding the NIKON name plate on the front of the camera. On the Spotmatic that's engraved directly into the housing. Hell, it might even be part of the casting.
>> Anonymous
>>252919

Considered the best by whom? It's not the most well-liked of their product range and I can't think of any reason someone would want to get one over the alternatives.
>> Anonymous
>>252924
Er, not sure what you're talking about. There are no screws holding the logo to the front of the prism, it's engraved.
>> Anonymous
>>252919
yeah yeah, cause leica eats glass and shits gold, right?

Just because something is made by Leica doesn't make it "the best * ever built". If it's "considered to be" then it's considered so by the faggoty collectors who keep everything in humidity controlled glass cases and never take it out to shoot with.
>> Anonymous
Reasons for using a Leciaflex: can mount most R lenses (i.e. Leica glass). Durable beyond the normal. Reliable. Easy to use. VERY large and bright viewfinder. Infinitely variable shutter speed between most notched speeds (a few exceptions). etc etc.
>> Anonymous
and i don't know anyone who owns a Leicaflex that *doesn't* use it in the field. I'm on a work computer so I don't have message board links but if you do a search for Leicaflex on google you should come across some reviews.

Here you are! :)

http://members.aol.com/manualminolta/leica.htm

>Leica owners that say their Leitz R3 with a Vario-Elmar 80-200mm f4.5 is better (or produces better pictures) than the Minolta XE-7 with a Rokkor-X 80-200mm f4.5 are living in a fantasy world. In reality, all of the cameras were made on the same assembly line in Minolta's factory in Japan and the lenses came out of the same vat of melted Minolta sand and had the same coating. At the time (mid '70's), the Leitz R3 with a Vario-Elmar 80-200 f4.5 cost FOUR TIMES as much as the Minolta XE-7 with a Rokkor-X 80-200mm f4.5.

So it seems to happen that the Leica branding isn't always what it seems. Not to say that this applies to other Leica products, of course, but perhaps it should be taken on a case-by-case basis for these things.
>> Anonymous
>>252994
guy - that's one lens and it's a relatively stupid zoom. If you wanted to talk about stuff like that I can tell you that there's an 800mm mirror lens made by Minolta with a Leica badge.

actually I'm not a fan of Leica as a system. For 35mm SLR I use Nikon but I honest enough to say that Leica's lenses for the most part are better than Nikkon, as are (were) Contax SLR lenses that were made by Zeiss in germany. Optically most Nikon lenses aren't that great. If you want to see how pitiful some Nikon wa lenses are compare shots with something taken with Contax G series - say the 28mm Biogon . For a normal compare to Contax 45mm Planar. G series sucks in other ways but not in lenses

a) Old contax SLR lenses aren't that great.
b) Contax G isn't an SLR
c) Nikon rangefinder lenses are a more accurate comparison, and those are definitely not worse than any G series lens.

This would make sense if Canon and Olympus weren't well established prewar (pre-Leica, in Oly's case), and if Nikon didn't have a pretty well known story for how it got into the camera business (financial difficulties postwar)

Just repairing cameras gets you nowhere near the knowhow to build one anyways. It's quite a step from lubricating a lens to melting glass.

I own G series and 4 Nikkon, plus two Hasselblads. The other day I was looking at some prints and some scans taken with the G and my Nikon F100. I always had the feeling that Nikon wasn't anywhere near as good as people thought they are, but side by side Nikon looks pretty bad. Don't believe I have either? I can tell you the good and bad on both sides - the G has antiquated shitty AF, stupid method of manual focus, and crap battery life compare to my F100. The F100 is in my opinion the most intelligently designed body of any type, has unbelievable flexiblity and autofocus that is almost imposible to trick. Nikon - great body, average lenses, Contax great lenses crippled by a stupid body. Sorry idiot, I can compare because I purchase all of my cameras to take photos. And BTW - the 'Blads make both of them look like a joke.

I don't quite see a reason to shoot with 35mm, now that medium format has become so inexpensive. Even a cheap medium format kit like a mamiya will blow the best leica or any other 35mm camera out of the water.

MF - bigger, take up more room in the bag. Much more limited lens selection. No really wide angle lenses available, very few no zooms, roll of 120 film is about the same $ as 135, yet has only 12 images, slower to use, MF cameras tend to much quirkier than good 35mm, filters cost MUCH more, if you shoot dig and film 35 mm allows you to use the same lenses for both, (some systems (ie Mamiya 330 etc) are hard to get repaired I could go on and on. BTW - I shoot both

They were replacing the glass broken in the leicas not just maintaining them. The reason they were popular is that all the jap companies did was replace the glass with stuff that only worked in the centre and was pretty shitty on the edges of the frame. Did they teach you how to read at the trailer park?
The post says I don't use Leica, and BTW I have used Pentax both 35mm and 645

Wow what the fuck where are your sources? Feel free to have a look at Nikon, Canon, and Olympus' Wikipedia pages to do some learning.

At the moment I use this Voigtlander Bessa R3A. I'd prefer a Leica but I lack the needed funds.

In response to the Minolta assembly line making Leica lenses - this is true however 80% of those coming off the Minolta line that passed Minolta's QC FAILED Leica's QC. So essentially the lenses were of the same design but they were of considerably higher quality optically.

>There are rumors that circulate claiming that Leica rejected over 70% of Minolta's lenses. Such a notion is ridiculous. No company would ever do business with another company where they had to reject such a high percentage of items. Another wild claim is that Leica made such radical changes to the items that they could be marked "Made in Germany". Absolute rubbish. If you look at any Vario-Elmar 80-200 f4.5 -- or any other Minolta-made, Leitz lens -- it clearly states, "Made in Japan". Yet another high tale is that Leica was unsatisfied with Minolta's quality, so they ended the relationship. This is just more garbage. Leica continued to buy Minolta cameras and lenses for many years (see below). Most of the APO elements in Leica lenses were made by Minolta, and Leitz continued to buy Minolta cameras until 1997. Eventually, Leica went one way in the photographic industry and Minolta another. Leica stuck to a more traditional path and Minolta ventured into unkown territory. So, of course, Minolta items were no longer of interest to Leitz. But to suggest that Minolta's equipment is less than the same gear with a Leica label is silly.

That's a straw-man argument post. we regularly reject 70+% of some items from vendors. goes with the territory. No one claims they are marked Made in Germany unless they really ARE made in germany. Straw-man. No one is claiming they ended their relationship over the reject levels. Straw man.

Just bought it for 75 bucks. I'm liking it so far.

On a side note, Ken Rockwell has pissed me once again. According to him, the cheap plastic 28-80 that came with my D70 kit is one of the best Nikkor zooms.

Well, I just put it again on my D70 to take the pic, after not having used it in a long time. Shit sucks.

Eh, Rockwell's OK, as long as you keep in mind exactly what he's doing with all his equipment. He's primarily a landscape photographer, so his concerns tend to revolve around perfect color reproduction and sharpness, and weight for lugging stuff around. He also doesn't shoot anything that moves particularly fast, if at all.

I agree with him on a lot of points, but some things have pissed me off as well. I've got the AF-D 24-85 F/2.8, which he HATES, but I've never seen any of the lack of sharpness he complains about, I don't mind the weight considering the low-light performance, and I love the fact that, unlike many of the DX and G lenses he prefers, I can put it on anything from my FM to my D2X and have it work flawlessly. I also like how solid it feels, and, on a front that he doesn't ever address, it's convenient that it looks so professional, as it makes subjects feel a little less like they're being photographed by some weirdo, which is especially useful when I do events.
