in the end it's up to you, but someone who's only been shooting for, oh, 5 years isn't going to be as polished and "professional" looking as a photographer who's been behind the camera for 20 years.
If you look at references and try to go in with those pictures in mind, you just get frustrated if you don't get a shot that turns out like the one you saw. It frustrates me all the time I run into others photos of places i've shot, then I look at how theirs are different than mine and go "Oh, damn! why didn't I think of that?" On the other hand, though, if i try to take the same approach another photographer did, i rarely like the shots I end up with.
