dear /p/,
I want to start making HDR images, but everytime, I fail. There's no good tutorial out there.
At the moment I have a Canon eos digital rebel XTi 400D, but the only problem I have is with photoshop.
I just can't get it to work. If someone can explain, or give me a tutorial, it would be much obliged.

tripod, lots of different exposures, and HDR photomerge, its not that fucking complicated.

try photomatix http://www.hdrsoft.com/. It's easier and better than photoshop when it comes to HDR

photomatix pro @ isohunt
on your 400D AEB -2,0,+2 at continuous shooting (handheld or tripod, does not matter greatly)
process 3 images through your new and free software

done

oh and also get Velvia Vision. it makes single images HDR. not as good as regular HDR, but it's good for getting more out of your (dark/high contrast) pictures. i think it's on isohunt or piratebay.

doesn't shadow/highlight in photoshop pretty much do exactly that?

Not bad.
How does shadow/highlight work?
I've got some images that I fucked up (trying to get a handle on a new flash) and that would probably help fix some of them.
