hey /p/.

I decided I should give photography a try. I was wondering if you all could recommend a lower-end digital camera ($100-300) for typical photos of objects, cities, and streets, for beginners before making any sort of huge monetary commitment. Moreover, some reading material, or some advice.

Of -course-, this could be googled, and I have been. However, other than its indeterminable legitimacy, I'd just rather hear it directly from people!

Sorry, if this is a reoccurring threat.

Canon PowerShot A-series. Good image quality for a P&S, relatively cheap, and gives you manual control so you can learn how manual exposure control works.

Kodak's "Joy of Photography" is a good book. Really any intro photography book is good. Preferably film--the "Learn Digital Photography" type books tend to spend way too much time on things like Photoshop and "How To Choose The Right Computer For You" and not nearly enough time on composition and framing. Film ones have a bit on picking the camera and picking types of film, but not as much. The basics of photography are pretty much the same for either.

Canon A590

Good aperture and shutter speed settings, easy to figure out. F value only goes to an 8 max though.

I happen to feel the same way. I have a D2x, D200, and a Canon Powershot S410. I also happen to think Ken Rockwell is a fuckwit.

If you want some good advice, ask somewhere else.

i own a panasonic lumix lx2 and i love it

it's on the higher end of the 1-300$ list but it's quite an interesting camera. it has many advanced features not usually available on a point and shoot.

it's unique in the way that the sensor's native output is a 16:9 ratio [like a widescreen television]

it has a great quality wide angle leica lens and is small and convenient enough to take around with me when i can't lug my canon 20d around

the biggest downside is not being able to shoot above 200 iso because of it's over aggressive system for cancelling out noise , so it is not a very good camera for low light situations, but it is amazing for when you go outside.

because it has so many photographic options i feel that i have really grown with the camera.

fuji makes some good point and shoots too. i can't give you any model numbers off hand, but maybe look up the customer reviews on some of their 200 dollar range cameras.

best of luck man~
