Soo /p/ I need your advice.
I am a big Nikon fan and have a D300 on order.
Problem is that they keep delaying the shipment, and I am pissed - I dreamt about this beast for months.
How bad will it be to change to Canon (40D)? The difference in price should cover at least a flash and one lens.
I also know nothing about Canon lenses, but I suppose that Tamron makes a 17-50/2.8 for a good price, just like the one they got for Nikon. What about zooms for Canon?
I need advice about lenses, and thoughts about moving my ass to Canon. I am just afraid that when I will see the D300 around and compare it to the Canon, I will slap myself silly for being stupid.

You will. Someone would have to be the biggest Canon pimp in the world to say the 40D is better than the D300. They're competing cameras, but one competes on a slightly lower price and being a Canon system (for those who are moving up from the Rebel, or pros looking for a backup), and the other competes on better features.

Assuming you own a sizable complement of Nikon lenses (basing this on the huge Nikon fan comment), it''s probably be a bad idea to switch systems. Otherwise, I don't think there is much stopping you.

...hmmm you don't mention any nikkors that you have...

the delay just means you ordered late... infact what did you order? just the body?

you'll excuse me for thinking you're trolling.

Considering NO ONE has D300s yet, what does a delay even mean? Just wait, dude. It'll be worth it. D300s are the shit. Take pictures with what you have. If you just have to get a new camera, get something from Lomo, or a cheap used medium format setup like I did. Go bananas, but don't switch systems because you're impatient.
>> OP
I wasn't trolling, just passing on the facts.
I ordered a D300 body only a couple of days after they were available online from Adorama.
Initially they promised delivery in the beginning of October - then delayed without a date. then they said 23.11. Now delayed again to December without a date. So at least a month more than I thought it would take. add to that the fact that on some forums people are guessing that the camera will only be available after the holidays, unless I am on the very top of the waiting list - which I am probably not.
I am not invested heavily in glas - just the beautiful Tamron 17-50/2.8 which costs about 400$ new and I can probably sell now for 300$. I got the SB400 which I want to upgrade anyway. other than that 2 kit lenses that I dont ever use (18-50 and 70-300 if I am not mistaken). I like zooms, but it is just so annoyingly soft.
So basically the change of systems will not cost me anything, it might even end up being cheaper.

downgrading? why? just because you cant wait a little longer for something thats totally worth the wait in the end?

i don't know why you guys are having trouble finding the D300. i've had mine for a while, and i fukken love it to death. i can't start my day without it!

Well change then if it's not too much of a cost.

You can't be that big a fan of Nikon if you're ready to swap that quick... and it's not like you're entrenched in the system with a Tamron lense and Sb-400...

Like you said, you can flog them off easy and you'll be able to get the 40D straight away. Get that camera and start shooting now if you're keen
