hay /p/. i've lurked this board for ages, and posted a few photos over time too. i know you get too many of these threads, but...

i have a budget of about $600, lower is better obviously. i've looked around and it seems i could get a d40x, possibly used a d70(s) or somesuch, a used rebel xt/i, or a used 10d/20d.

recommendations? everyone i know who knows anything about it just turned it into a nikon Vs canon thing, or bitched about the d40x needed the motorized lenses(which amusingly, is happening in a thread here right now). what i really wanted to know was what the advantage of a 20d over a revel xt/xti would be, or something similar for the nikons. noise in low light is a major consideration for me, by the way.

picture obviously unrelated, but the only worthwhile thing on this computer right now. shot with my ancient and severely smacked up power shot a85, at the summer solstice parade/fair here. only other interesting note is that someone had tripped over and broken my tripod(fuckers) so it was shot handheld, as far as i remember with a relatively long exposure of like 1.3 seconds.

I would say Used D50 and 50mm f1.8
That would be a good start, Great quality glass, limited focal length forces you to think about the pictures you take and helps Stops the horrible Take a wide pic to get everything in mentality.

I can vouch for the D50. Great beginner's dSLR. I can also vouch for the 50 1.8, and how valuable it is to shoot with it and only it for a while. I just finished using basically only it since March.

I'd second that setup for under $600. You'll be able to do a lot of really beautiful photography with that.

as i was reading that i was going "wait, no zoom, but that--- OHHHHH".

i think i see where you guys are going with this. it also appears from interweb reviews that this is one of the best nikon lenses, even though it's like $90(or less on craigslist, etc)

i'll be back in a few months with pictures. it also appears as if i could pick up this entire setup for $500 if i really tried. and that's including a new in the box lens if i was lazy.

Build quality and controls. The 20D feels a little studier, and it has two control wheels compared to the Rebels' one. Great if you shoot in full-manual mode all the time, but something you can probably live without if you'd rather have a few hundred bucks in your pocket. Image quality is pretty much identical.

Don't get the 10D. It's a 1.6x crop but can't use EF-S lenses, which means you're completely fucked for wideangle. Also, it has a 2.5 second startup time. Bleugh.
