Anyone trust the Automatic modes on Canon cameras? Lately I've lost a lot of respect for them. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong.

Pic taken with Av mode.

and by automatic, i mean program ae

default setting i leave on the camera when i'm not using it

you clipped the highlights, but yeah. underexposure is the easiest single thing to fix with digital photography. in some cases, it's actually preferable to underexpose. i don't know why people overreact to it all the time.

It's not that I (No.141169) overeacted to it, it's that OP blamed the camera for user error that was his fault. Although, yes underexposing is in fact not a bad thing to do, he didn't know what was going on and blamed the camera. We're bashing him, not underexposing.

It doesn't look as good as the orig photo would have been if taken correctly.

EXIF says you use EOS 400D. It's a known problem with some units to constantly underexpose. Unfortunately there's no quick fix. Either send it to Canon to recalibrate it or use exposure compensation. You can check underexposure if you shoot under normal light and the camera says that everything is right on target, but histogram gets all compressed to one side.
