Hail, /p/. First time visitor, don't rape me please.

I'm finally getting a DSLR soon, hopefully. Thing is, I don't know which. All I know is that I'm tired of my 7MP P&S Olympus that takes 10 seconds to boot up and 4 to take a shot, all dim as hell.

The three I'm thinking of are the Nikon D40x, D60, and the Canon Digital Rebel XTi. $700, $750 and $600 respectively. All with various 18-55mm kit lenses. The underdog here for me is the D60 since it's $150 away from the REALLY good D80, while, according to ken rockwell, hardly being better than a D40. Then again, I hear the guy is a moron, so I have no say in this.

Though I originally wanted a Nikon, I'm leaning towards the XTi since it's so cheap and from what I gather, comparable in features to the D40x. Thing is, it seems to be showing its age as a 2006 model...

Halp a DSLR photography noob out, /p/.

Save up and go the extra $150 and get the D80. Out of those three, though, I'd probably go with the XTi, and I'm a nikonfag.

Or, get a used D50 or D70s.

Most important: go hold each camera and see which you like best in your hands. They're all going to perform about the same.

I've never made a wrong purchase listening to Rockwell, so I wouldn't say he's an idiot. He's right when he says the D60 really isn't much more than a D40. A D40 is going to do everything you need. A D40x is going to everything you need and has a bit more pixels.

It's up to you. I would just go with the D40 since 6MP is really all you need.

Fail detected in every reply so far.

Step 1: If you're a photography noob, dont buy a D80 or anything equivalent. You will either drown in the options and switch to AUTO preset or hate and sell it.
Step 2: Once you embrace your faggotry, go buy a cheap DSLR with a decent lense (Nikon kitlens seems really OK for it's price.)
Step 3: Since you still have to figure out the shitstorm of options on your camera, go take 400 photos a day.
Step 4: ?????
Step 5: PROFIT!

Wait, why not just tell him to get an A-series, learn how to take manual photos and work with the limitations of that. Once you are at the limit of that you will have a much better understanding of what SLR type you want.

Alright, let's look at other pluses-minuses of DSLRs. How about battery power? How long does the XTi's last? How about the D40/D40x? Battery grips; Worth it or not?

XTi's battery lasts forever. I assume the Nikon equivalents do too. The combination of keeping the sensor off most of the time and the big batteries they carry mean that SLRs can go a long time between charges.

Battery grip is useful for extra stability and portrait-mode controls. I'm guessing the only reason they threw in an extra battery slot is because they had nothing better to fill that space with.

Excellent, excellent. So no dealing with the 20-shots-BOOM-empty-battery of certain P&S.

You have all (well, most) have been most helpful. I thank yee all. I'm going to go handle some in a bit and see how I feel about the XTi and some of the Nikons.

Incidentally, XTi body only + 18-55 IS would be a better idea than XTi with kit lens. It'll probably add another hundred bucks or so to the price, but it's a much nicer lens.

save the little bit more money you need for the d80, forget about the d40. i got one and am having serious buyer's remorse, now that i realize it seriously limits the lenses you can use for it... get the d80 and you'll be happy for a long time, i think

Being the newb you seem to be, I suggest a cheap Canon S3 IS or high end A series with manual. That's enough to take great photographs. A dSLR in your hands would be a waste.

perhaps a used canon 20d would be good for you as well, although it depends what you're into. if you're a sucker for large screens and a few more megapixels then skip it, but i think its high fps and great performance makes it a good choice, although you would want to ask them how used it is if you were to chose it, lest you get stuck with an ERR 99.

otherwise an XT or XTi would be an ideal choice, as would be the d40[x], but you should know that with the d40 you will be knowingly locking yourself into buying nikon af and af-s lenses, as it does not have its own motor drive (neither does the d60)

why is it called naruto of cameras

I think it's just one guy who keeps saying that. Just ignore it and move on. That's what I do.

Stop fucking asking and bumping this thread.
