DREAM/REALITY THREAD!

because I am curious.

Post what you are currently *using* on a decently frequent basis, and then what you wish you had to use.

feel free to post how much you paid for your current equipment.

I'm sure you can guess which one is my dream and which is my reality...

just got: D300, had D80.
lenses: 50mm f/1.4, 24mm f/2.8. occasionally 18-200mm vr.

need/want: 70-200mm f/2.8 vr, 14-24 f/2.8 or 17-35 f/2.8 or 17-55 f/2.8 (basically anything around there will do). 105mm f/2.8 vr macro. maybe a 35mm f/2 just for kicks.

dont really have a need for the other glass, but itd be nice to have when i want to try shooting different things lol. the two primes do me just fine.
>> Anonymous
I use regularily
D200 + Sigma 10-20
D50 + 24mm f1.8
Regularily swap out for a 30mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.8

All I really want is a D300 (to replace the D50 as my low light camera), I have a wicked set of lenses for pretty much any situation, and 2 external flash's.

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8:
http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/lenses/dclenses/18-50mmEX.htm
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_1850_28/index.htm

or

the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8:
http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/1750_diII_a016.asp
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/tamron_1750_28/index.htm

Both have Sony fittings listed and both seem rather nice from the available accounts. Tokina hasn't released a Sony mount version of their offering.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>95533

The tamron is better out of the 3 anyway.

The tokina whilst having a much more robust build, is optically lesser than the Tamron supposedly.

Just gotta hope you get a decent copy of the Tamron... also the build quality ain't that much better than the 18-55mm
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>95534
*has just seen a 400/5.6 sigma for under 100gbp*

WHY AM I SO BROKE.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>95534

Yeah, the Tamron seems to be a good lens and from what I've heard it likely beats the Sigma too. Other than the possibly noisy motor (I've heard others say it wasn't that noisy and didn't bother them) that was mentioned here before it looks ideal. The Tokina looks like it might be the poorest of the lot, optically speaking. I heard some very unflattering things about it.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>95537

That's what happens when you use a So...*ahem*.

That Sigma prime is a good buy. I've seen it used by a lot of bird photographers and the results were impressive. You'll have to hope you get your lottery numbers this week.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>95539

I tested the Tamron thoroughly before i got my 17-55mm Nikkor and it was a tough decision to make considering i was forking out a shitload of money.

The autofocus can be loud, but like the optical quality it actually depends on the particular one, so it's important to get a test on the lens incase you get a bad one... something that ultimtely pushed me to the nikkor.

The tokina's distortions at the wide was horrid... actually worse than my 18-200mm...
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>95537

Oh yeah, watch out for the old Sigma lenses that haven't been rechipped to work with modern bodies.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>95541
Ive been invited to come shoot our surfboard team down in Newquay this weekend and my 100-300 sigma is a peice of shit. I so want it but its evilbay so I couldnt get it till sunday at the earlyist.

BASTARDS!
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>95542

It's always annoying when a lens has a lot of variation and you have to send it back once or twice to get a good one. Some models or brands seem to be more notorious than others for that.

Did you look at the bokeh closely with the Tokina. I've heard it described as looking like "rolled condoms". Ouch! Not so good if you want a smooth and blurred background it would seem.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>95544

Oooh. Unlucky.I might have been tempted to offer to pay more for something like the Fedex speedy postage if I was really desperate for the lens. Sometimes they are willing to arrange these things if you ask or even have it on offer on the page somewhere.

Not a good example of that Sigma zoom you've got there then? Is it the 100-300mm f/4? I thought that one was supposed to be very nice.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>95546

The Tokina's distortion just put me off, i didn't check the bokeh as i was shooting wide DoF to test the distortion.

>>95544

How far will you be? i used a Sigma 50-150mm 2.8 when i didn't have my old 70-200 2.8 at an surf carnival on a soft reef. But i was able to get close on rocks where my line of sight was parallel to the break.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>95547
NO its a silver Sigma 3.5-5.5 or something, i picked it up in Japan for 20gbp or so. I have nfi how far i will be or where I can go but since im not a pro it doesnt really matter.

Id go out and buy a 400 now if i had the money, i just dont have any. Or a job.

On-the-go kit is a Bessa-L loaded with HP5 with a 15mm CV or Industar-26.

For everything else, I use:
D50
Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4
Sigma 30mm f/1.4
Nikon 50mm f/1.4
Sigma 70-200 f/2.8
SB-800 and various other strobes

My kit serves me well and I don't normally find myself wanting for much, but if I could have it all I'd add a D300, D3, 85mm f/1.4 & 28mm f/1.4 Nikkors, and a 200-400 f/4 VR for the heck of it.

Hey, we have very similar kits.

Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4
Canon 28-70mm f/2.8L
Sigma 30mm f/1.4
Canon 50mm f/1.4
Canon 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5

I was going without the 28-70 for quite some time until I realized I was constantly switching between the 30mm, 50mm and 70-210 for portraits and decided to splurge a bit on the 'L' lens. I leave that on my camera pretty much all the time now since I've been doing people shots almost exclusively lately.
