...is there any market in this? I've been doing it for a while just on my own, but was thinking about doing for serious business.

The only catch would I want to do it 100% remote, i.e. customers scan their own photos and then I do the editing. *edit - 4chan won't let me upload the high-qual one, so this is medium quality jpeg*

Thoughts? Example of one of my works-in-progress... my husband as a child

I've restored OVER 9000 old family slides this summer, but I would never be doing that for money. After a while, people start expecting magic from you, and becoming upset about the photos you cannot restore D:

why did you leave some spots on their shirt?

Good job! I'll have to agree that this happens with just about everything. People stop appreciating and become more demanding. Even if it they are family, sometimes it's good to remind them that there's no reason why you're obligated to do restore their slides in the first place.

ritzpix.com, not sure if they accept online submissions but it's done in every store. Flat $50 fee no matter the damage, age, or request (including two prints and a CD).

I might reconsider what I've just said about never doing that for money.

The stuff you've shown here is pretty basic so I don't think you could really do it as a business. Unless you have some other really difficult things you've done. Also are you able to create your own website? You would also need to think of your abilities to do that and then market.

I charge $100 an hour to do photo post processing and retouching for photographers so there is a lot of money out there in retouching work you just have to be good enough/ know the right people to get into the market.

At the photog studio I used to work in, they restored old photos, for around £25+; depending on what needed to be done.

What I wonder is why raw processing labs haven't sprung up for professionals who never used to develop and print their own film.
>> Anonymous
>>267588
I've heard of companies having special staff that processes raw files.

But anyway, developing raws is much less hassle than developing film. And you can just shoot JPEGs Ken Rockwell style and skip the development altogether.

That picture shouldn't take anymore than 15 mins at the very most. How can you have a work in progress of something that shouldn't even take that long to begin with?

maybe because this is the entire photo i'm working with
and I take pride in what I do and DON'T do it with "one click" solutions

The Ritz outlab does pretty great shit. We get seriously damaged photos and slides that are restored to amazing condition. We can do color, contrast, and spot removal like you are in the lab, so outlab photo restoration is reserved for serious business.

I hate to say it, but it doesn't matter that 1-click software exists that can do this stuff. And this board is full of skilled people - some of them are probably better than you. It doesn't matter.

You need good marketing, good advertising. Get yourself some banner ads in key places, and set up a website. Let people click on your ad, go to your website, upload their photos and leave a contact email address.

You can then fix up the photos as they come in.

Then you send them a thumbnail of your fixed version when it's done, and allow them to buy the big version.

People won't look for something better, something cheaper. You can make a business out of this, EASY.
>> Anonymous
How long have you been using photoshop? I don't think you are good enough yet keep practicing.

I was considering letting this thread die, but figured I would end with my own ego in tact.

Time is NOT a factor - I started shopping around 11pm, I had work at 5am and posted right before bed. I do use filters but most terribly fail at getting rid of dust/scratches- I'll use them on the lowest setting, then go through and edit them by hand.

Most of the examples are CRAP that blur the background... My intention is to keep the integrity of the photo, not edit everything all to hell.

I knew I should have waited until I had a polished finished product before I came down and proffered myself unto the GODS of /p/

What you do isn't that hard... try to restore some really old photographs. Ones with heaps of dirt.. stains and shit all over em. That's what you need to learn how to do and that's not something everyone can do. I'm talking photos from the 1930's and shit.

OP:

The healing brush will be your main weapon of choice. Its one of the most powerful tools in photoshop & once you've mastered it - you can restore pretty much anything.

Tools I use:
Healing Brush
Clone Tool
Levels & Curves Adj
Unsharp Mask
