Absolute proof the camera does not make the photographer.

Incredibly banal photograph with technical gimmick (ultrawide) and bad light: 1Ds, a professional 36x24mm sensor DSLR.

Incredible photograph: A small sensor bridge camera.

Oh, and it's pretty cool that gives one the EV of the scene in the EXIF. Of course one could get it from a chart, but that's so much more convenient than hauling one out.

Yeah, 'cause that's such useful information.

If you ever plan to do photography on anything except a camera with autoexposure modes and a built-in matrix meter that gives a neat +2, +1, 0, -1, -2 readout, yes, it is.

There are meters that just give you the EV and expect you to know off the bat what settings to use with that. I'm trying to learn the chart, and having a camera that told me right when I looked at any shot I took what the EV was would help that, especially in building the sort of intutive understanding needed to actually work with it.

I don't know, I've been shooting with cameras that have no meter for the last fifteen years and have never had any need to know scene brightness in exposure values.

>There are meters that just give you the EV...

Everybody quit doing that 30 years ago because it was a huge flop with the meter-buying public. Nobody wanted a meter that spit out numbers that didn't correspond to anything on their cameras, nor did they like the extra step of converting EVs to shutter speeds and F-stops.

There are meters available that can be set to display in EVs, but you can set them to display in F-stop and shutter speeds, lux, foot candles, candelas per square meter, ass hairs per newton-second, and whatever other obscure units you might want. No remotely modern equipment will force you to use EVs.

I actually like the EV matching system on older Hasselblad lenses and don't mind working in the EV system at all, but that still doesn't make having exposure values in EXIF data useful information. It's totally useless once the picture is taken, then all that matters is the final shutter speed and aperture that the photographer chose.
