Me and the wife are thinking about setting up a little garage-studio, and want to know some lenses we should look at getting. Note that the size of the garage is maybe 10-12' deep, 8' wide.
Currently shooting on a D40, kit lens (bring on the storm), and the Nikkor 55-200 VR
Price IS a factor, but I'd rather pay a little more for decent glass.

I'm at work, so pic is from the Myspace.

I'd hit it.

Wonderful to hear you'd have sex with my little sister.
Know anything about lenses?
>> Anonymous
bahaha!
>> Anonymous
Fuck lenses, first you need studio lights, reflectors, and a background stand and some backgrounds you like. Lighting is FAR more important for studio work, and the lenses you have will provide good results when stopped down.

When you've got the lighting and are ready for a nicer lens, look at the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 (which won't AF on your D40, not a big deal) and the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 (which is available now with AF).

>>271703
Nope.

Give me your sister's number?
>> Anonymous
>>271712
Thanks for the info, I'm taking that into consideration. Looking at AlienBees in that respect.
Does that Tamron have AF on the D40?
>> Anonymous
>>271712

you're thinking of the 17-50 made for castrated nikons

the 28-75 doesn't have a built-in motor
>> Anonymous
>>271717
Nope. She's underageb& anyways, don't want anyone going to jail, now do we?
>> Anonymous
>>271724
Who has to know about it?
>> sage
>>271727
Huh. I don't know. Maybe her big brother?

saging my own thread because of you.

Any other opinions on lenses? The Tamron (17-50) sounds good, but the kit 18-55 hasn't failed me yet. It just sounds like extra money that could be put towards lights & whatnot.
>> Anonymous
Your D40 with the lenses you have along with a Digibee kit is full of so much win.

http://www.alienbees.com/digi.html

If you are using bees in a home studio, you can stay at f9~f11, so you don't need expensive glass.

How tall is the garage?

I suggest the Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4G
>> Anonymous
>>271721
>>271719
http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/2875mm.asp
"Nikon with Built-In Motor - Available"

It's covers the portrait range on a DX body better than the 18-55mm or 17-50mm, so it's perfect if you want AF and something sharper and faster than your kit lenses. The 50mm f/1.8 is still a good place to start: cheap, sharp, and AF isn't important in the studio.

Lights and shit come first.

Not very. If I actually put a ceiling on it (skeletal right now, can see the beams), maybe 7' or 8'. Just a guess.

See picture.
though.

>>271738
Sorry, don't like Dave Chappelle.
>> Anonymous
what are you doing for backdrops?
>> Anonymous
>>271740
Probably buying some pre-made ones. Or getting creative with different materials found at WalMart and putting something together.

Also, I'm looking at the different 50mms. All Nikkor, 1.4G ($440), 1.4D ($320), and 1.8D ($110)
Is the extra stop really worth a few hundred more?
>> Anonymous
>>271741
Only the 1.4G will autofocus on the D40. The 1.4D and 1.8D will be manual focus only on the D40.
>> Anonymous
>>271741
Outside of AF, they'll all produce the same results for studio work. AF doesn't matter, get the f/1.8 and better lights.
>> Anonymous
What's the height of your garage? You should at least have 12" in height, so you can have shots with the lights coming down on a person, and it'd be easier for taking group shots.
>> Anonymous
>>271750
Smart thinking just saved me money. Thanks anon.

>>271748
12", huh? Yeah, typo, I know. I don't think it's that high, but if I finish it so the ceiling is right against the roof I can get some lights that high. Good thinking.
I'm off for the night, keep it alive gents.

Thanks again.

LOL!

Why did you give him the 17-40 f/4L?

Should have given him the 50mm f/1.2L.

What did you use to edit the exif?
>> Anonymous
it's the 24-105

didn't edit it, first hit on google for 1ds exif, didn't bother to look for one with a 1.2
>> Anonymous
Your current lens set-up is fine, like everyone's said if you're shooting at small apertures your kit lens will get fine results. A longer standard zoom wouldn't help since you have the 55-200.

I also wouldn't get a fifty- and this is coming from a big primefag- just to have one, unless you do a lot of work outside of the studio. The only reason to go for another lens in your situation is for some subjective preference of the look of the results of another lens to your current one.
>> Anonymous
shitty kit lenses have no contrast at all even if you do that whole STOP DOWN TO F/8, ALL LENSES ARE THE SAME

and i'm not talking about that contrast you all like to boost in Photoshop, it's micro contrast. everything looks flat and like shit with shit kit lenses
>> Anonymous
>>271784
Not everyone is big on microcontrast. I am, but if the OP hasn't developed his own taste yet it doesn't make sense for him to shell out for another lens that might not end up to his liking.

And if we're getting into suggesting some awesome primes, suggesting a fifty is a bit off. Touch too short for a great portrait lens (in before Nifty Fifty fanaticism, I'm not saying great portraits can't be made with that field of view, I've done it myself, but that's not the point), something like a 55-70 would be best, combined with a 28-35mm for wider shots.

Are three of those fuckers enough for a decent lightning? Also only a on camera flash.
>> Anonymous
>>271784
another idiot

go and learn something before your try to teach someone. If you were to take lenses made in the 30/40/50's and compare them to lenses today, lenses today with their coatings, and anti-flare paint inside, and computer optimized formulas would blow them away technically and yet some of the best photo are were done in those days. Lenses don't take photos idiot and a good photographer know how to work around equipment shortcomings.

>>271834

The problem with floods is they get hot, uncomfortable, and almost unbearably bright for anything in front of the lens. I use them all the time for flower photos when I'm shooting B&W with my 4x5 and they're brilliant for that (contrast is great), but for people, they'll want to slice you long before you've even got your eye up to the eye piece.

Thanks! I plan to try them with white umbrellas stuck on them.

I buy them for portraits, two on the person, one for the background. Well, what can I say, I'm poor but love photography.

>>271784
That sounds like something I don't notice nor does anyone who looks at the photos I take notice either. That day will come eventually, but until then, I'm cheap-skating it out of that.

>>271870
Not me, I plan on going for the DigiBee package from AlienBees. Or something close to it by AlienBees.

I do appreciate the help, everyone, really. It sounds like lights make more sense than lenses at this stage of my photography life.
