hey /p/

i need to get a new prime for my nikon and i've narrowed it down to these

Nikon 50mm f/1.4
Nikon 50mm f/1.8
Nikon 35mm f/2.0
Nikon 28mm f/2.8

from Nikon, or the Sigma 30mm f/1.4

what do you think?

50mm f/1.8

Cheap and good. If you don't already have it now then you should get it.

I'm a fan of the 35mm, but everyone should own a 50mm... Why don't you have one already?

50mm f/1.8 is so cheap I'm getting it on a D60, meaning no autofocus. I got to test it in the store and went home to check the results. Beautiful, beautiful BOKEH!

i bought a new car 3 months ago

the 50 1.8 and 28 2.8 are basically the same lens. I own both and can barely tell them apart. The 28 is basically a normal lens on a crop camera, and the 50 is a mild telephoto on a dx.

They're still both sort of "niche" lenses for me, the 80-200 AF-D is on my camera 99% of the time.

You're pretty stupid.

I'm kind of new to all of this but is there really much of a difference between the 50mm f/1.4 and the 50mm f/1.8? i mean is the f/1.4 worth the extra cash?

The extra speed isn't really worth it alone. But it has superior build quality and is sharper.

I think he meant they have the same look to their results, which is very likely. They're both Nikkors and in the same price bracket.

And if he does use the 80-200 most of the time for what he shoots, then they are niche lenses for him.

At least in the Canon world, the difference between the f/1.4 and f/1.8 is more in the build quality than in the extra fractional stop of aperture. I don't know if the same is true on the Nikon side of things.

theres also the sigma 28mm 1.8...

I presume it would be as good in low light as a tighter lens...

I think I'm the only person who has a 50mm f1.8 for free and I dont use it much since I got other better ones to use. The 50mm usually just sits in my bag....i prolly should sell it.
>> Anonymous
i wish my 50mm looked that good, aesthetically

good on Nikon to not update the design ever to make it cheaper unlike a certain rival

i'd love that aperture ring and distance markgins

Mine does. But it's also like thirty years old or some shit and radioactive.

I find the 50mm f1.4 is not any better than the f1.8
In fact wide open the 1.8 definitely is better for sharpness and contrast than the f1.4
Stopped down to f1.8 the more expensive f1.4 is roughly identical.

So its more for the light than anything else. I'm not actually a big fan of my 50mm f1.4. the Sigma 30mm f1.4 I find to be quite a bit better quality wide open, and my Sigma 24mm f1.8 is much better stopped down to f2.2 - 2.5
However different focal lengths for different uses, so I keep em all!

The 1.4 is nice, I use it for trick shit like this one of the dog, although you can do the same stuff with the 1.8 for half the cost.

Mostly I use this lens for dim-light photography and family photos. The the razor thin depth of field and light-gathering-ability is great for indoor family photos without a flash.

I have the 1.4 myself. I find myself using that extra speed more than I expected.

When I was trying to decide between the two it seemed like the 1.4 was sharper, which is why I got that.

Someone too stupid to save up for a few months probably doesn't need more than a Powershot A-series. There's a small number of people who genuinely, financially would have a hard time saving up, but again, I'm talking about the majority.
