Travel Camera? Anonymous
I'm heading to Korea, I'm poor as hell but if there was ever an excuse to get a decent camera...this is it.

So /p/, what should I get?

Pic unrelated.
>> Anonymous
are you deep into photography already or just starting?
>> Anonymous
Definitely just starting, I merely have an extreme interest. Always wanted too, love taking pictures, and a few teachers like my stuff.

I'm in college and plan on being a journalist and taking my own pictures is important to me.

Travel blogging Korea is going to be part of my senior project so I want my pictures to suck because of me, not my camera.

(thanks for the reply BTW)

Canon A-series is a good starter camera. I'm partial to the A630 myself. Good image quality (for a P&S), not too slow, full manual control available, tilt-swivel LCD so you can be sneaky and look one way while taking a picture of something else. Also, it's pocketable and doesn't scream "STEAL ME!" quite as loudly as an SLR would, which makes it a good travel camera. And that size advantage means it'll still be useful if you do decide you want to upgrade to an SLR.

Huh, I expected a far more expensive suggestion, thanks a ton!

However, isn't 8 MP superfluous? I though 5 or 6 was more than enough, even for professional work.

*sigh* I'm such a photo nub.

Yeah, but they don't sell the 5-6MP models anymore. You can pick up a used A95 or A610 for cheaper.

I wouldn't really recommend the A95, though. It's a heckuvalot slower than the A630 and probably the A610/620 too.

Agree with the Canon option. I myself have an A640 and love it. The only thing I do not like is the inability to adjust the focus myself, but since I am a college student, I figured I'd wait to get a DSLR when I graduate. But this camera is great. Use those blue Energizer lithiums. I have to change batteries about every 6 months or so, depending upon how much I shoot. All in all, it produces astounding images for very little. I even use it to produce professional images for catalogs.

Highly recommended

The Powershot A-series is popular. But as a travel camera, I find that the SD models are better. Perhaps it's better known as something else outside of the US, but the name escapes me. The slim compact design is very nice and useful. Its auto mode is quite accurate and the flash is pretty "smart." It's quick fast and the shutter speed is synced just right (compared to my old Canon A520 that is.) The only down side is that when you load it to your computer, there seems to be a film over your shots, as if you were shooting with some sort of grey filter on it. With some quick and easy post processing, you'd get nice vibrant colors.

I think they're up to SD1000 now, but getting the older models like the SD600 is fine too. The only new thing about SD1000, other than the specs, is that the body is almost purely rectangular and possibly made of magnesium. I only held one in my hand for about 4 seconds so I'd suggest you verify using the internet.

For someone who's trying to get into photography-as-art rather than photography-as-hittin'-the-button-at-friends'-parties, he should really get a camera that offers some level of manual controls.

>>67901
You can manually focus with an A640. It sucks, but you can do it.

How do I manually focus my A640? I had no clue that was possible
>> Anonymous
>>67908

disregard that. I figured it out

disregard that disregard

Hit the down button. That's the Macro/Manual focus button. I think one press gives you Macro and two gives you Manual. Speaking of manuals, maybe you should read yours? ;)

[OP]So I'm looking for an A610/20 or SD600-1000?

Oh, I really appreciate the help BTW. ^_^

I just got back from the financial aide department and it looks like I should have enough for a decent camera after some other expenses (LAPTOP ARGH).

yeahhh

yea, I've always thought the MF stood for Macro Focus. Eh, it's alright, but I wish I could move the focus to some point other than the center

Really wouldn't recommend the SD series. No manual controls.

[OP]Right, so I'm looking for a Canon A620 (or higher price willing).

And apparently I should use blue Energizer lithium batteries.
