Nikon P80 vs. Canon S5 IS

Went into a camera shop today to compare, the Nikon was $50 more, and both were fairly similar.

Here's a few things I remember between.

-Nikon has a slightly wider angle lens
-Nikon is more P&S; smaller, sleeker. Canon felt more like an SLR
-Canon has more expandibility, with a hot shoe and the ability to put on lens filters and such.
-Canon takes AA, Nikon rechargeable Li-On

What do you aim for in a camera? If it's taking pictures of your friends at parties this is too big. If it's taking serious control of the picture taking process this is too slow and the sensor is too small.

Buy a smaller P&S or buy a DSLR.

You have no idea what an slr feels like.

>Canon has more expandibility, with a hot shoe and the ability to put on lens filters and such.

ahaha.. I can just picture some retard walking around with a 580ex on an s5 is. cute.

I didn't post what I need it for because it is inconsequential. Bare in mind this type of "bridge" camera is what I need, and only wished for opinions on two models.

Please, no more baseless assumptions. I know how an SLR handles, what I posted was an analogy, more than a literal comparison.

D40, god damn. when i worked at Ritz and people asked about these, i just said, 100 more bucks, and you have the d40 package and 2 lenses that are superior in every way to both those cameras.

I'd rather buy an S5 than a D40 even it were the same price.

I suggest an S5 (or S3 for cheaper). Their image quality is actually quite good at less than full resolution. Plus the movie mode is top notch if you are interested. Don't let people tell you that SLRs are only a few bucks more expensive. A decent lens will cost you more than the S5. For the versatility and range of the lens, the S5 is a bargain. However, wait for it to go on sale since it does often.

Well gee, if you're so smart, then don't ask. The assumption is that you're not just asking for a comparison of two models, you're asking to how best fulfill your needs. Unless you'll get struck by lightning for considering an alternative, wouldn't it be better if we helped you find the best way to fulfill your need as opposed to forcing yourself to get one of two models that might not be the best at what you're going to do?

/p/'s general opinion is that nobody needs a bridge camera, but I'm sure you're no longer really interested in what we have to say.

(I can actually imagine a couple situations where these would be ideal but whatever)

Why lie to your customers?

An SLR never costs as much as the kit, unless you want a naked camera that just sits there on the floor.

What about a memory card? Can't take pictures without it. Case? You can't carry the fuckin' things in your pocket, after all. Filters? Don't want to break the lens. Tripod? Or did you think you were going to hold it 100% of the time?

Flashes? Vertical grips? Extra batteries? More memory? Another lens?

SLR's are never "just a hundred bucks more". They're fucking expensive.

That kit comes with a basic case.
Filters- unless he can name a specific reason (for protection is highly debatable) he doesn't need any yet.
Memory card- ~$40.
Unless he shoots a hell of a lot, he doesn't need an extra battery.
Unless he wants to shoot in low light, a tripod isn't necessary yet. But he'll be better off in low light with an slr than a p&s.
If he's contemplating a p&s, he doesn't need an external flash yet. That's just gravy if he ever wants it.
Another lens- comes with two lenses already, 18-55 and 55-200 VR. Great range for experimenting and figuring out what he likes.
All I see is the camera kit plus $40 for a memory card.

This is not to say this is what he should get, I'm just pointing out that it isn't really an issue.

If you're going to extrapolate that far then you could say "oh what if OP outgrew his P&S and then had to buy an SLR on top of that SHIT THAT'S EXPENSIVE GUYS"

Neither of these are pocketable either by the way. And a tripod would be nice for them. Might break the lens, so you could put a filter on the S5. Also you could look into an external flash. And gee, what about more memory and accessory lenses? You can spend a ton of money on a P&S setup too (though this is probably not a good idea)
