Hay /p/

I want a camera. I've never had a digital camera, and I don't know where to start. I don't want something overly cheap. I'm thinking a good SLR that will take photos in RAW format, but I also don't want to spend too much money.

What's a good model to start off with?

Pic not really related.

Get a Nikon D40 or a Canon Rebel XT.

Any digital SLR will shoot in RAW format and let you take good pictures if you actually gain some amount of skill.

Pro tip: If you don't know where to start, you should figure out where to start before you spend $500+ on a new camera. dpreview.com, wikipedia, etc. Go read up on the subject. Educate yourself. Use whatever camera you have now to improve your photographic skill.

Step 1 - decide you wanna be a photographer
Step 2 - ask /p/ on 4chan what you should buy
Step 3 - buy a budget DSLR for $400
Step 4 - realize all your pics with your new camera are dark, blurry, soft and otherwise ugly
Step 5 - go to the camera store... find out your kit lens sucks. Spend $500+ on a new lenses
Step 6 - get a bag to carry your huge amount of crap around with.
Step 7 - leave your $1000 heavy camera and lenses at home, in the closet. Dig it out for holidays and take crappy family photos.
Step 8 - decide its time to upgrade. Go to step 1

you forgot step 9: try to sell your old obsolete shit on craigslist for 90% of what you paid for it ten years ago.

step 5--even a "shitty" kit lens can produce great results in the right hands.

a. That's not step 5.
b. Whatever step it is, the guy posting it has not gotten to that step yet.
c. Regardless, the people the guy posting that was describing with those steps won't ever get to the step that is. It is a step on a different continuum from the list he posted. A continuum that definitely doesn't have asking /p/ for camera advice anywhere on it.

Point is that the kit lens, along with the DSLR, is in the WRONG hands. People try to solve the problem with more and better camera equipment... all the time.

A $20 Kodak Brownie Hawkeye produces fantastic results in the right hands too.

Having fancy equipment won't make you a photographer, but having shitty equipment might turn an amateur off from it all together.

a good model to start off with is someone who's really attractive and at the same time really patient since you're gonna suck and take forever if you actually try to use manual mode on your cam. Also preferable a person who knows how to pose well since you'll prolly do a bad job at that too

oh and if you want a good camera to start 1ds-mark III, i hear for the money it produces the nicest pics you can get, at least with 35mm digital
