sup /p/edo's?

I am looking for a pocket camera that I can take with me almost anywhere, and take quick snapshots. However I also want the ability to zoom without any abberations on either end of the focal planes.

I was looking specifically at a ~200USD pocket cam with the best glass I can find.

Here are the ones I am looking at:

Nikon looks pretty solid

Nikon point and shoots have HORRIBLE cro-mabs. They really use terrible plastic optics in all their p&s. Get either the fuji or the Casio EX-v7/v8.

Do any camera makers use real glass in Point & Shoot's?

the canon sd 800 and 870 are some of the few pocket sizes that go to 28mm equiv.

um that would be pretty shitty but i don't think they use plastic in the lenses even if it's a point-and-shoot

Plastic body in the lens. Glass is a term used synonymously with lens.

Hate to burst people's bubbles, but even in lenses for "real cameras" plastic gets used, most commonly as a cheap way to make a spherical element aspherical by tacking on a piece of aspheric plastic to it. Still improves the optical quality.

Yes, but 1) it's higher-index plastic leading to less refractivity and better optical quality, and 2) the best plastic lens will never be as good as the best glass lens, period.

Nikon specifically has shitty problems with CA in all their "sleek" point and shoots; I should know because about this time last year I really wanted to get one, but I did a lot of research (on steves digicams, etc.) and found all pictures taken with all coolpix models to take crummy pictures because of the crummy plastic used.

So by comparason a fuji or casio uses much better optics? (at least in the P&S lines)

Much better, no, but definitely a little better. Every single compact point and shoot is going to have problems with CA because of the physics of the small glass (plastic) lens element. It's something you have to deal with in the ultracompact market, and no one can completely overcome it. But the EX-v7 I own takes the best pictures out of any ultracompact p&s i've owned, and I've owned Sony, Canon, and others.

A good idea is to go to a site like http://dcresource.com/ and checking out the reviews of the small p&s cameras. Compare the photos in the gallery at the end of the review, and come to a conclusion yourself.

well unfortunately they only review either www.dpreview.com or www.dcresource.com have is the review for the SD870...

Are there any other sites which are indepentant and vendor neutral whom review pocket cameras?

how about you stop worrying so much and just buy the canon

Because I try to find the best camera, not the best marketing campaign.

yeah, dpreview is all a big conspiracy

In a thread about wide angle ultracompacts, where's mention of the Panasonic p&s with 28mm Leica?

The 10x optical zoom one?
>> Anonymous
>>179085

that one and plenty others

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Panasonic/

and do a ctrl+f for 28mm, there's like ten millions of them

the very first one is even 25mm

Problem is, Panasonics are known for having great, genuinely designed-by-Leica lenses but poor JPEG processing that lets the lens down. It's not a good idea, generally, to buy a Panasonic that won't give you raw files. The ones that do are great, though.

Someone needs to make a PHDK.
