resize comparison TheGeneral !m7n7x2Yyfo
ok guys from the sigma 24-70 thread:

which is shaper:
resize then sharpen (as Liquified suggested)
or
sharpen then resize (as DC suggested)

the image was taken with a Sigma 18-200 DC OS and edited in PS CS3

the sharpening applied was smart sharpen 100% with a pixel radius of 2.

I think it's clear that the sharper image comes from Liquified's method...or I could just have messed up eyes...haha

Did you use Bicubic Sharper algorithm for all three?

The third one seems to be a tad oversharpened. Sometimes, I'll sharpen before the resize, fade to 50%, then resize, then sharpen again.

Oh, and I always fade any sharpening to Luminance, it helps keep the noise and CA lower.

Manny Librodo sharpening...
To taste.

Pretty cool. Adds contrast, though. Not sure if it's good or not.

that actually looks good, got a fullsize sample?

and; in b4 "unsharp mask makes everything in focus"

Hmm

Top is Smart Sharpen 100% at 1.0 and faded for Luminance.
Bottom is the method you brought.

hey Blackadder, what is the thought behind this?

cause according to DC, he sharpens before he resizes to preserve detail.

I put my image in Lab Color Mode and select the Lightness channel. Then I use unsharp mask, from 50-70 or something. Then I select the Lab channel again and put the image back in RGB Color Mode.

>At the risk of being obvious, sharpening has to be among the last steps you take in adjusting your photo. If you adjust pixel values after sharpening, the sharpening effect will be compromised.

Sharpening for the image before resizing is a really bad idea. If you are going to shrink the image (and most of the time for web displays or prints people will be shrinking it) then why sharpen it while it is a huge image? Any effect you have will be obscured and compromised. Likewise when enlarging; sharpening as a tiny image and then blowing it up will not give ideal results. You must always sharpen for the size you are going to print (or display) at. Doing otherwise is pointless.

WIthout any experience I'd say sharpen then resize, just from the picture you posted.

post processing is minutae? Your photos must look bland as fuck.

And you'd be wrong.

i'm not sure why this matters which is sharper. you could resize the image then sharpen it a million times, then it would be sharper than all of the examples, would that one win?
>> Haddock !!xREx2m9lgBs
>>196419
No, it isn't, but debating which sharpening technique is better is just masturbation. Who fucking cares?

dude chill. you're getting riled up over nothing. This was a discussion we had in the morning. There was no discussion going on in /p/ so I decided to kick start something.
