PowerShot A-series. A650IS is my preference.
1. Will give you the same image quality as the bridge camera 2. Will give you the same amount of manual control as the bridge camera 3. Will be a hell of a lot smaller, so you'll be more likely to have it with you when a photographic opportunity presents itself 4. If you do continue your adventure with photography and want to move up to an SLR, the PowerShot will still be useful as a go-anywhere pocket camera whereas this one is too bulky for that duty. 5. Will probably be cheaper.
Basically, superzooms like this are good if you never ever plan to move up to an SLR, or if you really, really need the huge zoom range (pro tip: you probably don't. Most award-winning photographs have been taken in the wide to normal focal ranges). If you're just learning how to take good photos before getting more expensive equipment, a compact P&S with manual controls is a better way to go.
