hey /p/ i have the classic question to ask you.

I am getting into the dslr category of cameras and i want to know which one the people on /p/ choose. I know the big debate over canon and nikon, but i want to hear pros and cons over them. If you have another choice, please state it.
I am not worried about lens right now. once i decide what camera to get, i will start looking at lens. I have none now so its a clean start for me.
Also, i have a price limit of about $2000, maybe a little less for the body.
I am not a professional and the camera would be used for personal use and when i travel.

Perhaps look into the Nikon D40 with the 18-200 VR lens. It'd be one lens to cover every situation you want, and a tiny package. If you want to go even smaller, the D40 with the 18-70 would be very good, very small, and very inexpensive.

look at all the lenses, decide which ones you want, then buy the body.

He's 100% right, and I wish someone had told me that when I started out.

That said, get the 18-200 VR lens if you can 1) find it and 2) afford it, or get the very excellent 18-70 Nikkor. It's tack sharp and has plenty of zoom range for your uses. You want a lens you never have to take off, and both of these lenses suffice.

I'm a little confused by your question here, so I'll see if I can answer both of my interpretations.

What make is it? Nikon. It's the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF VR lens, and it's exceptional.

What makes it special? VR, and comparatively great performance across almost all focal lengths except the furthest telephoto end. VR stands for vibration reduction and essentially allows you to shoot low shutter speeds with good sharpness. Apparently it's supposed to give you the equivalent of 3 stops of latitude when making your exposure, though that doesn't mean much to you, I'm sure. It basically obviates the need for a tripod in many situations where you'd need one, and helps for low-light shooting, though it doesn't do anything for freezing motion. But, as you're not a professional, I'll spare you most of the intimate details of the lens, and just tell you that it's the best consumer lens Nikon makes, period.

if you want to get the 18-200mm VR your best bet is either B&H or KEH. neither of them take order reservations and both sell it at the MSRP of $750 instead of the jacked up price of $1000 many other places are selling it. just check them once a day and youll get one soon enough. it took me about 10 days before KEH got some in stock.
