*cough* Uh, what, exactly, does a ring flash do?
>> Anonymous
gayass ring catchlight in eye

and soft even shadows
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
If you have to ask you don't need one. Do a search for pictures taken with ringflashes, both macro and portrait/fashion stuff and you'll get it.

hot chick taken with ring flash

always related

Ring flash shouldn't be used out side of fashion photography and a very specific kind of pop-art portrait.

That said, you can't beat a ringflash when it comes to fashion photography.

Also useful for macro, nice wrap-around light.

Pardon my newbness but what's the thing on the top? Is it the same as the red thing I see on some flashes? What's it for?

su-800 commander

remote trigger/controller
>> Anonymous

It's the infrared flash trigger for the nikon CLS (forget the name). Essentially yes, it's "that red part" you find on the SB-800 but without the flash as well.
>> Anonymous
>>165754

forgot to say, that's the IR emitter/receiver

and on flashes, the AF assist beam is integrated in that part

hey now, my mother is certainly easy to impress. She gloats over those really bland flower pictures I take.

I still love her though.

that is fail, the plastic ring does not do what he intended it to do at all. needs a more diffusive material instead of that clear plastic
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>165847
well yeah, the application on his part needs some work as far as the final product, but I just mean that the way he built it is interesting. Id love to try something like that, my dad has access to fiber, but Im honestly probably too lazy to do it.

but yeah, just the idea is neat to me for a DIY.
