I'm about to plunk down $400 for a Ricoh GR Digital.

ITT you either congratulate me or persuade me to buy some other bit of kit.

why?
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
I want a lightweight, take anywhere camera, sort of a digital rangefinder (I plan on ebaying a 28mm viewfinder so I can use it thusly). One that doesn't draw attention to me the way my Nikon does, shoots silently, and has good image quality.

One click away...

I wish I could spend the money on a 50mm f/1.2, but I feel like that's sort of excessive... I already have the 50 1.8, and this is a WHOLE CAMERA. :/ Oh, and you can take voice notes with the pictures, like a fucking D2h/D2X/D3. It'd be really useful for my PJ work.

Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself?

My will is weak.

Nah, I just always waffle at the last minute, when the money is about to vanish.

Look forward to a lot of 28mm shots in the near future!

where did ya get it from for that price?

Twelve seconds between raw files. One wide focal length, which is perfect if you like it, but 28mm equivalent is damn wide for most things.

I'm assuming you're buying this for street work and as a quiet camera to use for your photojournalism when an SLR would stick out like a sore thumb?

My suggestion would be a bridge camera of some sort. I know /p/ haets them, but my Panasonic DMC-FZ8 works perfectly for street work and as a discreet camera. It handles great with the included 52mm filter adapter attached, and it's got this nifty "zoom resume" feature that lets it boot up the lens to the last focal length (I always set it to 7mm, which is the same as a 28mm on a DX sensor), and I'm pretty sure it boots up to the hyperfocal distance of the lens, too. Close enough if not that it can be used like that. The lens itself is great, especially as a portrait lens if you jog it to medium telephoto. The EVF is genuinely sharp and bright, and manually focusing it (which is necessary because of slow autofocus) is fast and accurate. There's a little DoF chart that pops up in the EVF when you do this, showing not just where it's focused (like Canon cameras do) but the actual DOF.

The downside of it is the small and hence noisy sensor, and how it lacks a hotshoe. Alternatives with larger sensors and hotshoes are the Canon G-Series and the Panasonic DMC-LC1, which has a large (for a bridge camera) 2/3rds sensor and a 28-90mm equivalent f/2-f/2.4 Leica-designed lens, with controls just like old film cameras (mechanical zoom and focus, aperture ring, shutter speed dial). There's a crapload of reviews of it over on the Luminous Landscape. I also understand Fuji makes some great bridge cameras, but I don't know anything about them.

And all the cameras I mentioned have faster raw write times than the Ricoh... the FZ8 has three seconds between shots, which is a pretty nice rhythm actually, and the old Powershot G2 can crank out raws just as fast as the one can press the shutter button. I don't know about newer Powershot G-series cameras.

And as far as the common /p/ criticism of all of these not being as portable as a compact... well, it's not difficult to carry a camera around over your shoulder, and if you're out shooting, you're an idiot if you keep your camera in your pocket. Tons of photographers have carried Leica Ms with them all the time, which are about as long and tall as a Digital Rebel.

The Ricoh has better build quality than all of these, except maybe the LC1, but putting up with 28mm equivalent and twelve seconds between raw shots just isn't worth it.

I like 28mm. Takes a bit of work in the beginning, but it takes you in the middle of things.

I looked at a bunch of cameras in my search... honestly, the image quality on those superzoom bridge cameras is just piss poor, even with Panasonic's "Leica" optics. I compared a LOT of images to the GR's via flickr, and the GR has a really nice quality to it...

I shoot with a 28mm f/2.8 on my Pentax, and I love the focal length for street work. On my Tamron 17-50, I'd say it's at 17 for at least 50% of what I shoot, if not more, and that's equivalent to ~25mm, so I'm accustomed to shooting wide.

I don't really mind the RAW write time business... I have no issue with shooting jpeg for 95% of the time, and for the few times that I want the increased bit depth, I'll just take a bite of the shitburger that is 16 second write times.

The small sensor initially turned me off, but the lens redeems it. At 1600 in B&W, it looks like Neopan 1600. I can live with that quality, even appreciate its aesthetic qualities.

I think I'll be happy with the camera... might even get the 21mm conversion lens, and get even wider than I can with my Nikon!

Some dude selling it used through Amazon. I like their system better than eBay's. Amazon deals with the dude, so I don't have to.

>>139276
Seconded.

Now, does anyone have a 28mm viewfinder to sell me? lol

>>139278
I've found just the opposite with the FZ8... the JPEG processing is horrible, but the raw files come out perfectly at ISO 100 and 200. Noise starts to be a problem at higher sensitivies, but it's usable at 400 and sometimes 800.

But if you like 28mm and like the lens-sensor combination of the Ricoh... well, there's nothing better to shoot with than a camera you like. I look forward to the photographs... you're a talented photographer, and these quiet shutters are a huge advantage whenever you're photographing people.

Someone's selling a viewfinder explicitly designed for the GR Digital on eBay. Only thing that comes up with a search for "28mm viewfinder."

Dealing with someone on eBay is probably safer than dealing with someone on 4chan.

Just bid on it... I'll be anesthetized when it ends, so hopefully that'll work out.

Go for it! I wish i too had the money to buy this little wonder.

I dunno, the images coming out of the GRD just don't float my boat, but otherwise it's a great design and idea.

Cosina/Voigtlander make an excellent 28mm minifinder which barely changes the dimensions of the camera at all.

Going to get the 40mm teleconverter? That's one hot length right there.

Do it, faggot.

Wait, you already did it. Um. Have done it, faggot.
