Hey /p/,

I just finalized the hotel reservations for a photo/college scouting road trip I'm taking up the West Coast next month. I'm going from Los Angeles to Seattle and Vancouver, with a stop at Mt Shasta on the way. Epic win amirite?

My question is, does /p/ think I should invest in a nice new lens for my Canon Digital Rebel XT before the trip? Currently all I have is the lens that came with it.

I'm already short for cash, and I need at least another 4gb storage as well, since I fill my 2gb card way too quickly. I'd only want to buy another lens if it's crucial. Think I should?

no

your current lens is the kit 18-55?
don't spend money on more gear if you are a little short on cash.
you'll need it for the trip

biggest downside of the kit lens is how soft it is, no matter what. so you'll need to run unsharp mask on pretty much all shots

buy the 10-22mm or the sigma ultra wide when you get back
since your thing is landscape and environments that lens is peeeeeerfect for you

Yep, that's the one.

Thanks Beethy, I'll look into both of those.

Just try to shoot everything at f/8, the kit lens is relatively sharp there. Alternately you could rent a lens depending on how long your trip is.

hah you set up a very cool and very long interesting trip with just a canon xti and your kit lens. you sir, are either brave or dumb

Photographer on a budget doesn't have many options.

it's not a big deal
400d + 18-55 kit can get some pretty damn awesome results
it's not always about the gear

...also, its much SAFER to travel with a cheap looking body+lens
