Sorry for making another recommendations thread, but I need your help /p/. I am split between two cameras, the nikon D40x and the canon Digital Rebel XTi. I heard that the D40x produces better image quality, but then again the rebel is cheaper and has more lenses. So what do you recommend ? I'm open to new suggestions
>> Anonymous
If you have no previous lenses/bodies/etc to anchor you down, I'd recommend going with the pentax K100d. It's vastly more full featured out of the box than both of the bodies you mentioned. I'd go as far as saying it's on almost on par with the Nikon D80 and the canon 30D at a much lower price, only shortcomings being Megapixel count (6) and the CCD is somewhat noisier at isos above 400. Has a great kit zoom though, from what I've read it's better than the kit zooms included with the d40/xti. Haven't played with the kit zoom though, I shoehorned my old SMC Pentax-m 28mm onto it when I tried it out. Great body.

OP here, I have previous slr experience, but the only slrs I have are film, and since developing film is expensive and hard to store ( I take hundreds of pics ), I am opting for a dslr. Moreover, since there is no film, I can be more creative. Previous slrs I own are canon AE-1 program and a canon rebel (film). Other than the XTi and D40x, I am looking at the rebelXT. The reason I am opting for a D40x and XTi is because of moore's law.

>>49262
If you own a film Rebel, you can use that camera's lenses on your Digital Rebel. The 80mm long end of the standard Rebel kit lens is pretty good when combined with the 1.6x crop of the APS-C Digital Rebel.

Pentax isn't going away anytime soon, count on it. At least, the K mount isn't disappearing. Samsung supports it, and despite the Hoya acquisition of Pentax, I still believe a Pentax dSLR purchase to be an extremely wise one.

It's always wise to consider Moore's Law, but I don't think it applies quite yet. Canon and Nikon have stronger systems overall, but if you're not buying into L glass or pro Nikon glass, it doesn't seem worth it.

i've got nothing bad against you nor the pentax, but you seem to always go off topic on every thread about how everyone should buy pentax rather than actually helping the OP with their question. ^_^;;;

Er. Please note, from OP post:
> I'm open to new suggestions

It may be a valid criticism, but it's certainly not a valid criticism for this particular thread.

I'd suggest a Pentax as well under normal circumstances, but if you already have a good set of Canon lenses I'd get a Canon.

>>49254

Okay. Now here how it is. Canon is cheaper, but! If you compare two cameras - picture quality on the Nikon will be better, with much less noise.
Strike two: Canon lenses are more expensive than Nikon.
And finally, you wanted a suggestion. I recently purchesed a refurbished body of a Nikon D50 from Adorama.com and a Tamron 28-75 mm f/2.8 lens for Nikon, and I am absolutely amazed with it. And it all costed under 800$!

Now, I know that lots of folks out there are scared of the word "refurbished". But look carefully for words "Refurbished by the manufacturer" (in my case Nikon U.S.A.), because they fix the problem, if there were any (or in my case it was just an open box camera, they sent it to the Nikon to reseal the box), after that they CERTIFY the camera, which means it's supposed to work just as a brand new one! It's not hard to buy extended 2 yr warranty for all parts and labor, just to make sure that you're backed up. So, please, don't be scared of those words like "refurbished" and stuff. But that's just my humble opinion!

The cost of Canon glass isn't an issue if he already has lenses sitting around with Canon mounts.

Got a source on that, or is it just Proof By Assertion?

(I've generally heard that Canon's better at low-noise, high ISO. Especially on cameras like the 5D)

op here, one more question then I'm finished,
Although buying a camera on the internet is cheaper, I am fearful to buy one because the lack of a warranty. So the question is, do I need a warranty?
>> Anonymous
lack of warranty? all the reputable stores include a warranty because they are new products and are authorized sellers. the warranty is part of the price of the camera. unless youre buying a refurb or used, it SHOULD have a warranty. just because youre buying online doesnt mean you wont get a warranty.
>> Anonymous
>>49370
those are manufactures warranties, I'm talking about those best buy type of warranties, you know...4 year, replace/repair warranties even if its your own fault

My D50 came with a 2 year Nikon Warranty, Had the "flash Circuitry, and the Jog dial" crap out on me after 24,000 pics (And one year)
got it fixed in 3 weeks 4 days (total time for me to send the camera away and get it back)
Not even a mention of cost, it was just done,
No drop marks on my camera, though it was used in the dustiest conditions short of the sahara for most of its shots

buy from an online store that offers that type of warranty then. lol.

Op here, just about when I made up my mind, I looked up some pentax cameras based off some of /p/'s recommendations and found out about the Pentax K10D. I heard that it has a ton of features but its very hard to use for beginners. What is /p/'s opinion? In my mind here are the pro's and cons's

Nikon
+great image quality
+easy to use
-expensive glass
Canon
+cheapest
+easy to use
-expensive glass
Pentax
+many features
+well built (water proof, sand proof, etc)
+Image Stabilization
+relatively cheap glass
-most expensive
-very steep learning curve
Feel free to correct me if my assumptions are wrong.

Sorry for asking too much, but I don't want to drop $600+ without all the facts; and thanks for your help, your the most helpful board in 4chan.

>>49983

Actually, having used both cameras, I can tell you that pentax isn't so much 'harder' than nikon to use, as it is different. Its like saying you've never driven before, and you have the choice between right hand drive and left hand drive. One is not inherently more difficult to use than the other, they're just different ways of doing the same thing.

Also, if the price of the K10d is a little steep for you i'd say step it down to the K100d. The only real difference is less megapixels (6 vs 10), and no weatherseals, and its a bit smaller. Seeing as how you're considering the D40 though, I don't think 6MP would be too much of a hangup. Plus, the k100D is cheaper in a kit than the D40, from what I've seen, usually by about 50 or so dollars (yeah, only 50, but that's 50 dollars more that could be used to buy a bitchin SMC-Pentax M 28mm f3.5 prime from the 70s. Have one, it's sex, and I don't think one would run you much more than 50 bucks.)

Cliff notes: pentax is a better bargain, if not necessarily the better camera.
>> Anonymous
>>49988
The K100D only goes down to ISO 200; that seems too high for me to want to use it as a primary camera.

My advice to the OP would be to get either a Canon, just because he already has glass for it, or the K10D, because it's probably the best DSLR on the market under the level of a Canon Mark III or Nikon's equivalent (whose name I forget).
>> pixle !YlHXuPBxBQ
>>49346
this is SOOOOOOOOO the opposite UNLESS you get a really expensive camera, as for the eos rebel models they're considered to be really bad when it comes to noise problems, not allowing the user to take photos at a higher ISO without having that problem.
>> Macheath
>>49996
I remember seeing a test on dpreview showing that the EOS series generally has the best high noise performance vs cameras in each respective class...

yeah a note to the op. dont get bogged down in the idea that having a vast amount of lenses even makes a slight difference to how good of a photographer you become.

a lot of ppl here have a hard on for as many lenses as possible and how much zoom and shit like that. its all bollocks. all this talk about iso this and f1.4 that is from noobs.

the d40x is nicer for the money than the canon. just a better camera all round.

>>49361
the d5 is nice but its price cant be justified in comparison to cheaper nikon cameras.

well, I'm just planning to buy 3 lenses, one wide angel (23-50mm), a standard 50mm, and a telephoto (50-200 or 300). Of course, this is due to change, but these three lenses will probably cover everything I need. The only problem with the D40x is its 3 AF points and its viewfinder (which in comparison to the canon) looks tiny to me, but I'll go to best buy again to try it out again. Thanks for the help.
P.S. I didn't mention the d5, another poster said it, I was looking at the Rebel XTi

>>50034
> one wide angel (23-50mm), a standard 50mm, and a telephoto (50-200 or 300).
23-50mm is standard and 50mm is telephoto on digital body. You probably will want something wider.
>> Anonymous
>>50072
sorry, I am used to the film standards, this is my first dslr
>> Anonymous
I can's speak for the Nikons, but at least for the Rebels, they have a 1.6x crop factor, which means that to compare against a film 35mm or a full-frame DSLR like the 1D means you multiply the mm by 1.6. Hence, my 17-85mm lens for my Rebel is actually zooming at 27-136mm. The same lens on a regular film 35mm would be the advertised 17-85mm.

This is great as your telephoto lens requirements are less, but it sucks in that getting really, really wide shots means even wider lenses.
>> ac
>>50192
Nikons have a 1.5x crop. Low end Canons (Rebels, 10D, 20D, 30D) have a 1.6x crop. High end Canons (1D series) have a 1.3x crop. High end full-frame Canons (1Ds series, 5D) have a 1x crop (i.e., they're the same size as a 35mm film frame).

Rebels and the 30d/20d can use the made-for-smaller-sensors EF-S mount.

uh... no. You probably didn't even see reviews of the EOS model which is the one I'm referring to and I've seen EOS high ISO pictures and there was a lot of noise as opposed to D model nikons which have very little noise at a high ISO.

I know what I'm saying, I own a canon and it has a lot of noise at a not-so-high ISO and I hate it. And I should know this as well seeing as I want to buy an SLR in a near future and I've compared both the canon and nikon in terms of noise with photos I've seen from both and nikon takes the cake.
>> Macheath
>>50464
Maybe you're right. I don't know. I've never used a Nikon camera in High ISO mode personally, so I can't compare from my own experience. But based on what I've seen at dpreview, the EOS cameras perform better at high ISO than the D200 at least.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos30d/page20.asp

I'm just saying, that's all. I don't mean any offense by it. If you're taking any, I apologize.
>> Anonymous
>>50464
Are you referring to the original Digital Rebel? That camera is four years old, all digital camera had shitty high ISO back then. New Canons have the best high ISO image quality.
>> pixle !YlHXuPBxBQ
>>50465
oh, canon eos 20D is amazing. Wait, lemme specify a bit more, the REBEL model. (which is what's being discussed over in this thread)
>> Macheath
In that case, the 350D does have better performance than the D50 at ISO 1600, while the 400D is slightly worse or similar to the D80 at ISO 1600, which isn't too bad considering the D80 is a more expensive camera.

>>50468
The D80 is generally compared to the 30D, not the XTi.
>> Macheath
>>50469
Yeah, I'd rather have compared it to the D40x, but dpreview doesn't have a comparison up yet.
>> Anonymous
I just got the xti and have absolutely no complaints at all. wonderful camera that produces wonderful pictures.
>> Anonymous
why wouldn't you just get a d40?

it's more than $200 cheaper for 4 less meaningless pixels...i mean, if you're printing out really big prints...
>> pixle !YlHXuPBxBQ
get the d40 or d40x depending on how much you want to spend but they're pretty much the same except for the MP which you only need if you want to make really big prints, other than that they're pretty much exactly the same.

another pentax fanboy reporting in.

Antishake is godly. for a canon 18-70 with stabilization, its £500 (probably about the same in dollars, maybe more)
the k100d or k10d will do it with the lens that comes in the box. which in itself is an excellent lens.

If you dont mind manual focus, you can get a 50mm f/1.7 in perfect optical condition for about £15. (again, probably the same in dollars. damn you americans with your cheap everything.)

on top of this, the k100d is the cheapest DSLR on the market right now.

YES, the new lens selection is limited. sigma, tokina, etc are often reluctant to produce their 3rd party lenses in K mount, and the pentax lenses are rarely available in shops.
But do i care? no. I love my camera, and i dont need 10000 3rd party lenses for it. the pentax lenses are cheap, and excellent quality.

and let me repeat. 50mm f/1.7 for £15!!!!
