I'm going on a flight and taking my digital SLR with me on my carry on, is there any potential damage via the xray machine?

yes indeed, a grave risk.
your camera might bump against the sides of the machine while being x-rayed, so be sure to put it in the little box they give you and tuck all the straps in.
Other than that no.

If you're scared, just tell them you don't want it to be scanned. They'll probably look at it, tell you to turn it on and that's it.

X-rays don't damage digital SLRs or memory cards. You won't lose your pictures or damage your camera by putting it through X-rays. This has been tested thoroughly.

I've also myself went on numerous trips with my gear and passed it through the x-ray each time.

Only risk is bumping against the sides of the machine or falling off the conveyor belt. Put it in a good, secure bag.

I think the fear was probably more with regards to the x-rays damaging the sensor.

I've sent my Digital Rebel through the airport x-ray machine several times (and will be doing so again on Saturday, WITH SEXY RESULTS!) and haven't had a problem. If it were a problem, the screener guys would get it drilled into them to ask and make sure everyone with something that looks like a camera bag took their camera out first. TSA doesn't like being responsible for destroying passengers' expensive items if they can help it.
