Photo nublet here. I'm going to Europe within the next few weeks and want help in deciding between two lenses. I'm not really too big on nature or stalking, etc photography so I don't need a really good telephoto lens ... nor am I rich, lol. I just need a decent lens for tourist and stage photography.

Trying to decide between Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens and Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens for my 350D. The reviews I've read are mostly the same (though weighs slightly in favor of Sigma), price is about the same..

Pic unrelated.

I've used that 70-300 APO Sigma and it's a very decent lens, but feels very plasticky.

A 70-300 means that you'll have to change lenses on the go, which may be quite inconvenient for casual tourist photography. Maybe you need something versatile like 18-200 if you don't care too much about quality? (However, this will be more expensive)

I've owned the 70-300 sigma, APO DG MAcro, and I can say its not very good as a telephoto lens, For multiple reasons, One its too slow, f4-5.6 = dark
two, its Autofocus is fucking slow, and it hunts a lot (which takes FOREVER)
Its macro mode is good, and its quite sharp for that, but you have to be like 4 feet from the subject...

Also its too zoomed in to be a touristy lens, Pick up an 85mm f1.8 for portrait type shots and use a 17-50 range for the rest of the touristy shots

/r/ unshopped image, it looks nice but the fake vignetting is killing it.

You'll have a hard time finding a lens that will satisfy you. Unless you pull out a film back and shoot FP4+ or some 3200 and push it, you're not going to have the shutter speed you want. Both of those lenses eat light. They're both fine and great for outdoors, but neither of them is satisfactory for stage photography without introducing a horrific amount of digital noise.

If price is the same, definitely get the Canon.
1. Holds its resale value a lot better if you ever want to sell it
2. Guaranteed to work with newer bodies that come out. Third party lenses sometimes don't get the EF standard quite right.
3. USM vs. crappy bargain basement Sigma motor. As others have said, autofocus on the Canon lens will blow the Sigma away.

I have a fairly similar sigma zoom, its fine for taking shots in daylight but as soon as the light drops off it becomes compleatly worthless, either overly long exposures or stupid high ISO to get anything useable out of it.

I did only pay 20gbp / 40bux for it so im happy.

this is 100% truth.

as is this.

Referring to "Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Lens" ?

Should I just stick with the kit lens throughout Europe then? ( I think it was 35-85 or something like that. ) I may buy the Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens ($300) later on because I take lots of cosplay photos anyway.

Sorry don't have unshopped ... I didn't take it.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind :)

I honestly don't know either way for sure, but I suspect the Sigma is actually a higher quality lens. No one is going to make a lens apochromatic and then make every other property of it shitty.

A 50mm lens isn't so good on a crop sensor. Much less versatile focal length. A 28mm or a 35mm is the way to go for a fast normal prime.

I agree with>>64812that your best bet is the 85mm prime. You lose the ability to zoom in on things you can't get to on foot for an abstracted shot, but you gain a lot of speed.
