Monopods AnonyBob !!bHK6FUTAyi2
How many of you all here in /p/ use monopods?

I have a pretty crappy tripod right now, I plan on buying a good one after xmas.

I am considering a monopod for the portability, my thinking is that in museums, zoos, and other places a monopod will be great to have on hand to help when i need an extra couple stops of stability.

One I am considering is the , bogen.manfrotto 695

the other one I am considering is the 560B. It has collapsible legs at the base

i have a friend who uses a monopod, shoots mostly photojournalism-type shots. i dont remember the name , but the one he got was off of ebay for ~$60usd, and only had one of those leg dealies at the end of it, which seemed like all he needed.

I use one; i love my monopod!

OP: Just make sure you put some kind of head on the monopod. Either a ballhead (my preference, most versatile) or at least one of the little tilt heads made specifically for monopods (see photo). DO NOT just screw your camera to the damned monopod directly. I see people doing this all the time, struggling to get the angle they want.

Very useful in the cases you have suggested. I use them for zoos all the time, they work even better when you lean them against the rail.

Monopod you say?

in b4 butterfly makes claims of magic steady-arm powers or that monopods are worthless

I'd say they're very limited, limited only to the times there's stupid rules about "no tripods."

If you need a portable stabilizer, fold up your tripod legs. There. You've got a monopod for everywhere tripods are allowed.

All other things being equal- I don't know if they are- get the one with the legs. You'll get much more use out of that, and probably more stability.

it actually depends on if you just move your camera up and down, or side to side. My monopod works better than my tripod, it's lighter, it actually gives me more steady photos and allows more movement than my tripod does

i use a monopod for my telephoto lenses, the lens foot detatches really easily so they make a good pair.
i have a manfrotto, i would reccomend it.

A monopod can be extremely useful, especially where access, rules, and mobility mean that a tripod isn't practical or maybe even allowed. It can make the difference between getting the shot and not getting the shot. Of course, all other things being equal, a tripod is going to be steadier, but that's not really the point here.

Thanks for comments. when I decide which monopod I will go with, I'll be sure to get a head for it also.

get a bogen/manfrotto. They seem to be able to make it through the most stuff, as far as I know.

Yea, that is the brand I intend sticking with for future purchases. Reviews for them seem to be good, and when I was at a local camera shop the quality seemed better than most. Local shop is expensive though, I'll be purchasing online.

Or if you have money to burn, the newer Gitzo monopods are awesome. The 6X carbon-fiber one is so damn light. It's listed at a retail of $280 CND, iirc.

light is good for monopods, but not so much for tripod stability. am I correct in thinking that?

In general, yes. Although there is something to be said for very wide, very light tripods.

Except that wind and telephotos make you a sad panda when you go that route and no body likes a sad panda.

Oh, and how. If I was willing to carry it, I'd love a 30kg tripod. Hmm...I need a manservant.

Just lug it anyway? Well maybe not that one. Just keep saying to yourself as you lug it up the mountain that it builds muscle and character.

i'm using a Benro MC-68 Carbon Monopod.
cost me fraction the amount of a manfrotto.
I use it with my 500mm f/5

I just think of some sexy time with hot ladies and plant my massive erection into the ground as a third leg, forming a natural tripod.
