Hello /p/ to those who use film SLRs, I was wondering how much abuse they can take before they are damaged? I currently shoot with an Olympus OM-1 and being as anal as I am I'm wondering if I should just continue using the crappy leather case that came with it or if I should buy a nicer case.

Thanks

You could chuck it out a 2nd story window and probably not break anything. Old SLRs are built like tanks.

Nothing else (except possibly a Nikon F series) is built quite this far, but a Leicaflex SL2 once fell 7600 meters from a fighter jet it was mounted on (for aerial photography) and it lived. But still, almost anything from that era will be leagues ahead of a modern one, and even those aren't any slouch, really.

I shoot with an OM-2 occasionally, and it's quite rigid, but probably not to the bunker-like specification of, say, the minolta T-201 (my sister has one). It's huge, and not to mention, heavy. She dropped on some rocks at the beach once, and all it has to show for it is a small dent.

Personally, at this point, cases are a matter of functionality and aesthetics, so pick whatever looks good, and holds whatever you need [film, filters, whatever]. You probably won't be satisfied with that either, as you'll want to carry along more lenses, a flash, motor drive, etc etc.
Usually I just carry mine on a shoulder strap at social events and stuff. It's durable, but it never hurts to be careful.

depends on the camera. I shoot with a eos 33 which has a pretty similar body to the 20D; ie. cheap plastic. That being said, I guess they aren't *that* fragile. Liska, I believe, shoots on a Nikon held together with duct tape :P

they build tanks from spare F5s'

The 20D has a magnesium alloy body. Pretty far from plastic.

Had an OM-1. Probably one of the nicest cameras to have for film IMHO. It's lens locking mechanism broke in 1999 due to metal fatigue. Unrepairable. For all the many, many pictures it took, and all the banging around it got across most of Europe, in the many climates that it went through, it performed flawlessly and looked great.

I own a Pentax MX that has been trough a lot of abuse. It's has been dropped, smashed into doors, heavy rain, pretty much everything. I even dropped it in water once. But the damn thing still works. I will need fire to kill it. It's not like I've all those things intentional, I used it when knew that the camera might have to take some beating, because I know that that can take much more than my more fragile AF bodies. It's not very often i use it any more tough, nowadays i use Nikon instead...

How long did you use your OM-1?
