I know you get all kinds of people asking for suggestions on what camera they should buy, and sorry but I want your opinions.

Right now I currently have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20. I'm thinking of selling it. The two cameras I'm thinking about are almost complete opposites though. One's a point and shoot and one's a dSLR. I'm thinking between a refurbished Nikon d50, and new Lumix DMC-TZ3.

I'm selling my current camera cuz I find it too bulky to carry around normally. I love it's ultra-zoom, but not it's size.

The only reason I'm really thinking of getting a d50 is cuz it looks awesome and probably takes much better pics than the point and shoot. I love pretty pictures but I don't love a bulky camera, and I love lots of zoom.

So should I just get the point and shoot, or save up a lil extra and go for the dSLR just because it's awesome?

Yeah, I know, stupid question.

Pic is the Lumix DMC-TZ3

Doesn't matter how good the camera is, if it's not with you.

It would depend on how you'll be shooting. If you really like the zoom, pocketability and don't really mind the so-so image quality, then get the P&S.

But personally, I'd just save a bit more then maybe get a new D40.

Have you looked at the FZ-8? It's essentially an smaller FZ-50, with pretty much all the features it has except SLR-style controls and 7.1 megapixels instead of ten.

The tradeoffs versus the TZ3 are that the FZ-8 has RAW mode, slightly more zoom, and I assume would be easier to hand-hold because of its grip.

The TZ1 is smaller and has a wider lens. Still, I can fit the FZ-8 into my jacket pocket.

Sounds like the D40 would be right up your alley. Its a smaller design than the D50, good price too. Great quality pics, and its DSLR.

Which do you love more, high quality images or pocketability combined with zoom?

And keep in mind what one of the previous posters said: Doesn't matter how good the image quality is if you don't have the camera with you. A small camera like the Lumix can go with you wherever you go, but you might not like lugging around a dSLR all the time. Not to mention the bag full of lenses if you want to have anything like the zoom range on a P&S.

Well after reading about the TZ3 it looks like a great compact camera and a good price to boot. 10x zoom too.
