i made a wire loop, with a coat hanger, and dipped it into a soap bubble mix. the light was a clamp light, resting directly above the lens, with tissue paper as a diffuser... the secret is getting a good large specular highlight.

GOD DAMN I LOVE COLORS

Woah, these are awesome. Can you show us a not-so-abstract shot? Like of the entire setup of the soap bubble mix?

Probably wants to keep that a secret :P

I think that's the stupidest thing in the world, and for now I'm giving OP credit enough that he doesn't behave like that.

Okay, so after a LOT of research, I've figured out most of what you've said. (Yes, I am very noob, but learning fast).

What is a "specular highlight"?
Also, what kind of soap? I have over 6 kinds of soap I can find without trying in my house.

"The term specular means that light is perfectly reflected in a mirror-like way from the light source to the viewer. Specular reflection is visible only where the surface normal is oriented precisely halfway between the direction of incoming light and the direction of the viewer; this is called the half-angle direction because it bisects (divides into halves) the angle between the incoming light and the viewer. Thus, a specularly reflecting surface would show a specular highlight as the perfectly sharp reflected image of a light source. However, many shiny objects show blurred specular highlights."

larger and closer the light source, to the subject... the bigger the specular highlight.

look up diy softbox

As far as soap is concerned... try them all... see what happens... experiment.
