jesus...this guy contacted my friend wanting to take "promo pictures" for the band. He wanted $50 and free entry to their next show...

I looked up the guy and my god...

Now Im admittedly not the worlds greatest photographer by any stretch, all of you know that...but how can someone actually have the audacity to _charge_ someone for something like this?

Just for comparison, this is one of mine that I've posted here before of the band this guy contacted (group pic with two other bands they played with, actually). It's not a great picture by any means, I totally screwed up my framing and ended up with a lot of space on the left side and some missing limbs on the right. But I would feel terrible asking anyone to pay any amount of money for this picture, let alone what that guy "delivers" for what the amount he asks.

He doesn't know better and his clients don't either.

Also, I think people shooting promotional band pictures is pretty bullshit anyway; if you want to get people listening to your band, give them some music so they can hear it instead of trying to create a generic "cool/badass" image. Or any image.

What kinda band has 40 members? Is this some kinda Ghetto Orchestra?

so do I, that's why I refuse to charge someone for "band shots" unless they actually approached me wanting to pay me to do it. I like shooting bands, it's fun, but I do it because I enjoy it and it gives me a good excuse to practice, not to try and make money off of a band more concerned with their image then their music.

Ah but you see there was a time... The 80's that proved that as long as you have a cool / badass look it doesnt matter what you sound like. People will throw panties at you.

for what its worth...the "badass metal band" image makes me want to keep mine _on_

What if their hair floated several inches above their head and their pants were way too tight around the crotch but giant bell bottoms at the bottom of the leg? What if they had glitter on their temples. What if they wore feather boas and everyone had on wristbands. Then what is your panty situation?

Band photos?

I shot this at a concert here (Shanghai) over the weekend. I think it am pretty good. 105mm super-takumar at f/2.8 and probably about 1/25s with EOS 300D. The guy is wet because it was more than 105 degrees inside. Band was the Clavells I believe.

YES I KNOW IT HAS NOISE, it's ISO 3200. You try shooting manual focus in a dank bar when the subjects are writhing and gyrating on stage.

You mean the drummer? Yeah, he's a hard guy to take pictures of. Pic related (HURRRR)

Exactly. I started shooting bands because some of my friends were in some and I wanted good pictures for myself and my friends in general, and that's turned into an in-progress documentary project on the music scene of the city I grew up in. Done 100% free, which also gives me the luxury of being the lazy ass I am when it comes to getting around to processing raw files. I have no interest in volume or speed of putting stuff out, which jives not at all with pay.

I would post pics, but shit isn't cooperating.

On the contrary, it'd just be another generic sweaty guy singing without it.

Props to the guy for using good MF glass.

Still bugs the crap out of me, first thing you see is him because he's so light in comparison.
