Also, is there any validity to what gets popular on flickr? Should I use it as a basis for what to put into my portfolio?
>> Anonymous
nope
>> Anonymous
what would you put them into a portfolio for? you took pictures of a shooting gallery and broken glass. unless you *made* that shooting gallery and have a story to tell about it, then no. it's also a poor crop. the second picture is just pointless.

I know about art school, and>>212319
is totally right.

Those photos are shitty as hell, HOWEVER if you have a good story or some sort of bullshit theory you can usually pass off really bad work as being "deep" which tends to blind most art-school teachers.

Without a story these are awful.
With a story your art school professors will like it but everyone else will think you're a hack.

K, scratch those then.
Something more like this, with that dust spot shopped out?

>>212349
I like this one very much.

Compositionally, it could've used more ground. A step or two back, say, to keep the same amount of sky.

would be cooler if that girl didnt have a fucking katana

>>212355
makes it easier to think of a story, though.
>> Anonymous
>>212355
No, the katana is just out of place enough to pull it together and be more than here's-three-non-generically-dressed-people-in-a-field.

This picture is a piece of shit. Look at some good photos, then try again. Do better this time.

Oh, and by this, I don't mean photos on flickr. Go to a library, look at some books. David Alan Harvey, Mary Ellen Mark, James Nachtwey, Richard Avedon, Sam Abell, David Hume Kennerly, there's a starting point, now go.

When I say "theory" I don't necessarily mean story.
It depends a LOT on what you want to go to art school for, but in most schools right now people want to hear you talking about nonsense bullshit like Foucalt and the Death Of The Author.

Basically you should be able to take any image from your portfolio (that isn't in there just to show technical prowess) and say "Ok, this is about X and here's why..." where "X" is some high-falutin' nonsense about some gay fucking thing like the natural/made environment or whatever. It doesn't have to make a lot of sense, as long as you can bullshit some sort of deep meaning about your work.

Truths, I went for a year. Just for not photography, so I'm not sure how it applies there.
