so the subject is cliche and everything, but I was pretty happy with how this came out from a purely aesthetic standpoint. And yeah, instant art and all of that.

Not sure how I like it best, though. This is with red filtering applied.

Yeah, very well done for what it is.

How was this lit? I'm confused by the choice of ISO800. I find the noise really distracting in the background areas...

The high noise is partially just personal taste when I do black and white. Lighting was practically non-existant and I was without a tripod (great aunt died earlier today, this was taken at around 8:00 tonight in my grandmother's front yard)

I could have lowered the iso down to 400 with ease probably, ended up using the onboard flash which pleasantly surprised me with this picture.

Instant art = instant fail.

In b4 "lurk moar", but I don't get this whole "Instant art = instant fail" thing just because someone converts to B&W in post. Granted, in most cases it probably IS a case of "ooh, now its artsy and I only had to press one button", but I'm willing to believe that in some scenarios it's actually a conscious decision in the vain of "I'm not ready to take on working colour theory into my work yet, so I'm going to perfect my technique in greyscale first." I mean, that's partly why most formal photography training starts students off with BW as opposed to colour.

Now, about these images, I agree that they seem well done for what they are, though I am a bit put off by the dead space on the right.

Which is pretty much why I shoot a lot in black and white. I understand the basics of color theory but I haven't had enough time to effectively learn it yet and shots that could be potentially ruined by my inability to properly...render, if that's the right word?, my coloring at this point can still be pretty good shots in black and white. It kind of gives me a little more freedom to think about how I compose the shot instead of worrying about how properly I'm capturing the colors.

Plus, a colored shot of a rose is just another colored shot of a rose. While not unique by any means I think these have a lot more character to them than any colored shot I would have been able to pull off of that particular subject.

Here is a version with the coloration restored and with the curves touched slightly.

Not really as pleased with it as I am the other two versions, however. Something just seems very off to me about it.

I definately like the black and white version better but that's not too bad.

I actually prefer the colored version myself. Somehow it kind of depletes the point of taking a picture of a flower if you put it in black and white, unless you were trying to make some sort of point doing so.

Adding another vote in favor fo the B&W versions.

I especially like this one. Much nicer texture.

not at all, a rose is a beautiful flower regardless of color. The black and white makes it pop more.
