Will this flash setup actually help? Anonymous
See diagram.

That is my exact equipment, 30D with 17-85 and a 580 EX II flash.

I am going to do some jailbait fashion show and I am wondering if that flash setup will actually do anything other than blind the jailbait?

I will be a certain distance, I don't know exactly, I think 10 meters from the end of the stage. I just know I can frame a full body shot at 85mm with some space around to spare.

And I don't think my flash will light up far enough for so I was thinking about putting it on the ground and aiming it up. I've got a number of different diffusers, homemade, ABBC, Lightsphere, Omni-bounce, mini softbox, stuff like that.

I'm wondering if the flash will help freeze the subject and any motion blur even if I'm (the camera) is some ditance away from the subject. Just like if the flash was on my camera hot shoe.

And second question is how do I fire my flash wirelessly?

you're gonna want to get closer with your 17-85, if it was me id use on camera, vertical with a bounce card, and use that to trigger my other sb-800 at 45 degrees left or right through an umbrella.

if your ceiling is low enough, put your other flash a few metres away facing the WRONG way with the bounce card up to eliminate a lot of direct flash.

or

somehow increase the venue's static lighting, or use more iso.

I can't get closer than that.

I've tried on camera. With a bounce card, I don't like the results because the light is too harsh. With a softbox, it doesn't light up enough.

ISO 800 and f/5.6 gives me about 1/30, it's well exposed but too slow to have crisp pictures. I don't really like going to 1600.

I did read it, that's why I mentioned that. If you dont have a trigger and a receiver, you're not going to be shooting wireless.

What you dont seem to be understanding with the placement of the flash is that a randomly placed flash usually looks worse than no light at all, when I say it would be unflattering, I'm saying it would 1.) make the model look less attractive, and 2.) ruin the picture

Put it in a softbox, and elevate it to around head-level and further away than youre showing in your picture, maybe add a reflector to fill.

No light at all = motion blur.

Front on flash that I can salvage > blur impossible to edit, any day.

What kind of transmitter is less expensive than the Canon one? It's $200, I'm not paying that much.

Id personally rather have some noise and a little motion blur than terrible lighting. ;)

Cheapest = eBay/Cactus trigger/receiver. Not very reliable, but they're cheap. I paid $15 for my set, I use the receiver to trigger my Sunpak 383, and then two AC strobes slaved to that.

Any blur is immediately fail.

Terrible? Says you. I've used the flash with softbox to the side of subjects numerous times up close, it works great.

What is the range on those things and will the flash have to face me?
