definitely leave the tripod at home.
Crop tight, try to keep the ball in the frame at all times, Also shoot people who are at the ready and look intense / much like your typical soccer player in action (no ball in frame for these)
Use long focal lengths and wider apertures to isolate the subject, large DOF is generally distracting, and framing multiple players at once is actually very difficult.
Also TRY to keep the face visible at all times, back of the head shots are usually no good.
