What's the best DSLR I can get for <$800?

The Digital Rebel XT looks pretty good, but I don't really know.

Body only? 30D or D80

Body and a nice zoom lens, not great but nice at least 35-70.

35-70 or 35-70 equivalent?

The Rebel XT is a great little camera, although make sure you try one out in a store since a lot of people complain that it's uncomfortable in big hands (although I've got huge gorilla hands and have never had any problem with the form factor, personally).

You can get the Rebel XT for about $400 nowadays, body only, which leaves you another $400 in your budget for lenses. My personal recommendation would be the 50mm f/1.8 II for $80 and the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS for $180. That brings you up to about $660, so you have $340 left over. That's enough for 17 $20 hookers, which would make for a great evening of photography.

I just bought an XTi from Adorama for 529 or something. Body only. Bought a 35mm f/2 and a UV filter. Total came to almost exactly 800.

In before Pentax

Try out an Olympus camera. You really get your money's worth. There are many combinations of bodys and lenses all <800.

in B4 4/3 is shit, Oly sucks.

Only pitfalls of the Rebel XT is the small lcd screen and the shitty kit lens that comes with it, otherwise its a great dslr for the money.

For 400 i would get the tamron 17-50 f2.8 and then save up for the 50mm f1.8.

im in the same boat as you are.

I've read very good stuff about the pentax k10D, it has weather sealing, they say its comfortable and it has a couple of innovative shooting modes (Which take the ISO into account).

They also say that the kit lens that comes with it is better than the regular kit lenses aaaaaand in-camera image stabilization, which gives you 2-4 stops of compensation with any lens.

I still have my doubts, im thinking of that pentax or a used 20D (mostly because many people around here uses canon and buying / selling used stuff would be easier).

Good luck with your purchase.

Buying into a camera system because of the kit lens makes you a retard.

I smash hobos with my k10d and it works afterwards.

I just mentioned it as a nice bonus for someone who is just starting, not as a decisive factor.

Yes, the K10D is awesome. They'll be harder to find, though, because Pentax is getting ready to release the K20D. They're supposed to announce it on January 24.

I hope the trade show lives up to even half the rumours out there. It'll be exciting stuff for those itching for new gear.

Cut your hair and get a job, then you will be able to afford a REAL camera (nikon)

So this clueless idiot is the same DB that supposedly knows all about photography after a few classes but he can't even buy a fucking SLR himself? LOL.
