So /p/, I need some help.

My father really appreciates the fact that I'm interested in a fairly serious hobby, namely photography, so he has decided to sponsor me with a new lens to help me take macro images and images from a large distance. Now, I know pretty much jack shit about the hardware part of photography, I pretty much just bought a Canon EOS 400D house along with some EFS 18-55 lens and went crazy, tried out all the settings etc.
But even if I can't say alot about the hardware in itself, I do realize that the lens lacks what I need for some of the more detailed pictures, such as taking a picture of a worn out coin or a snapshot of the moon peeking out from a cloud in the middle of the night.

That's where you come into the picture.

Recommend me some good and fairly cheap lens for a Canon EOS 400D with good zoom for macro images and whatnot. Pros/cons are greatly appreciated.

Maybe the Sigma 17-70?

i've heard a lot of good things about the EF 100mm f/2.8 macro, and it's not too expensive

Microscope and telescope really are your best bets for these. You'll usually be able to attach your 400D to them.

If you really do want a lens though, the 60mm EF-S Macro is an okay macro which is also pretty cheap, while the 100mm EF one is better but a fair bit more expensive.

The 55-250mm EF-S telephoto zoom is really cheap and fairly good, and unless you want serious telephoto I'd probably go for that.

this one is APO, which is better, a bit more expensive maybe $80, but worth it, it's macro is 1:2

anyway i personally prefer the canon 55-250 IS, it's macro is 1:2.9 , which is less than the sigma one, but hey dude it's IS

OP here, I looked up all lenses at my local shop of awesomeness, and here are the ones I found which you recommended:

http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=47405
http://www.webhallen.com/prod.php?id=47414
(don't mind the swedish, the specs and stuff are english anyway)
Couldn't find any priceworthy L-lens though.

They all seem good as far as I can tell, but there are still some things I'm not sure about.

The first link is in the group "Objektiv Fast" while the other are in "Objektiv Zoom", which translate into fixed lenses and zoom lenses. Is this anything I should think about, or is it just their way of sorting out lenses?

And the second and third lenses are basically the same, only with the "APO" title on the last link. What does APO stand for, and why would it be worth ~40% extra cost?

tl;dr Which lens out of the links is the best?

Apos is short for apoth... something. it's got better lens coating I believe. Check wikipedia.

it used to be that fixed focal lenses have superior optical qualities, but we are in the 21st century now, zoom lenses are as good unless you get you a $1000+++++ fixed focal length lens.
it's not bad to own a couple of fixed focal length lenses, especially their main advantage is the lower f-numbers.f/1.8 f/1.4 f/1.2
i'd recommend a fast 50mm, a specially dedicated macro lens 1:1 something around the 100mm mark, and if you're rich enough get a good fish eye lens.

Why would you want optics from the 80s? I mean shit, it's nearly 2010, the distance we've come in terms of optical performance is astounding...

How the fuck can you disagree with that when it's quantifiably verifiable fact? The quality of the glass not to mention the construction of the lenses of now absolutely eats anything that came out of the 80s by a long way, and you'd be a fool for not accepting it. That's like saying Kevin Bacon wasn't in Footloose.

Psssh, fucking Johnny-come-latelys 'round these parts.

Still fucking do.

>the distance we've come in terms of optical performance is astounding
It only matters in a pixel peeping level which is fucking gay.

For example, first hand experience though I don't have the samples now. A Nikon 50mm f/1.2 AI-s stopped down to f/8 is still heaps sharper than the 18-55mm at 50mm stopped down to f/8 while the 50mm AF f/1.8 stopped down to f/8 is sharper than the AI-s only if you look at a 100% crop from the 10mp RAW of the D80.

facepalm @ this whole thread, but my 40/1.8 Hexanon fails HARD at flare and bokeh compared to my 40/2 Ultron. It's also softer wide open, despite its reputation as one of the sharpest lenses ever.
