What are the advantages of constant aperture? Anonymous
Hey /p/, I understand that faster aperture = more light and more light = better. Better for the viewfinder, for accuracy of AF and possibility of freezing motion. Also better bokeh.

But do people actually shoot wide open? Most lenses are at their best when stopped down, like 5.6 or 8.0. So what advantages does a constant aperture have if you're going to stop down anyway?

You know how some lenses have a distance scale on them to tell how far away the thing you've focused on is?

The lens knows that too.

only my kitlense doesnt have distance on the focus ring.

also flashes can guage distances by using a magical red light, then ADI can tell it to the lense.

Well, I guess I don't feel too bad about that since I've only been in the game a year now. Heh. I've just got the Mamiya 80 f/1.9, of the lenses you mentioned. I had to decide recently between the 50mm f/1.2 and a new iMac, and I choose the new iMac. I'll try to snag the 50 soon, though.

Let's forget about the flash AF assist beam for now.

I point my lens at a tree 50m away. How does the lens gauge it's 50m away? Does it send some light out and see how long it takes to get back?

I keep desperately wanting him to criticize one of my photos so I can respond with "I don't feel the need to explain my art to you, Warren."

I'm sorry, Dave, you can't do that. At least not after telling us your name is Dave.

I use wide open apertures because I love bokeh, also, I usually shoot indoors or during low light situations, so the more light helps.

Yes, as long as the focal length is the same. Things shift slightly if you zoom in/zoom out, at least on most modern zooms.
