Well, I've come into abit of money and have decided to buy my first DSLR. Not sure if these kind of threads are welcome here, but I could really use some advice. I've been looking into a Nikon D90 for a long time and was seriously planning on getting it, but, noticing a thread awhile back, it seemed to have some issues and now I'm abit hesitant. My budget is roughly 1000$ give or take 200$. Can you suggest anything that is better than the D90?

There really aren't that many issues which would stop you from purchasing it. Basically it's worth getting and it's a great starter - mid level camera.

The only concern i have is the budget.

Because rememebr it's never only the camera,
you'll need:

Lens(es)
Memory Cards
Bag (though a regular backpack with padding will suffice, i sometimes just pack a sweater to cushion it)
Tripod (get a decent one)
...not to mention speedlights if you ever want to get into that.

But lenses are top of that priority. Most places i've seen liss the D90 at 1000 US... so you may be hitting a bubble with your budget.

Thanks Jeremo; right now I'm just looking at one with a lens kit, and it's about 1200$. I just don't want to go for a lower-end camera because of immediate budget issues that can be solved with a few more weeks of work. I'm glad I'm not getting thrown into a trap though, I guess the reviews were right, I suppose.

ahh good good, hmmm then it's worth saving up a little bit more and getting the tamron 17-50 would be worthwhile.

Now i recommend that because the 25mm-75mm range is one of the most widely used (it'll cover landscape to portrait etc etc) and the 2.8 will really really come in handy both for dof and that fact that when stopped down to f/4-f/5.6 the IQ is stellar.

But obviously if you want to shoot beyond the 75mm range then it's a different story all together.

(???) Wow... Thanks so much Jeremo! This is great info that I know I'd probably never find. I'll probably be back to ask some more questions once I have my cam. Thanks again!

Well the general information is out there in forums like dpreview.com and flickr etc etc, but it is much easier and faster to ask yourself since everyone has different needs.

I did the exact same thing you did a long while ago on /p/ when I first got serious about photography. But yeah, nothing liek working your booty off for a new cam/lens/accesssory

If your budget is roughtly 1000$ why don't you get the D80 + nikkor 18-70 kit and the nikkor 50mm f1.8 + extras (bag, sd, tripod, etc...) for example?

It's a perfect camera for being your first DSLR ( in fact it only have a few less not-really-important-features than the D90 for a nice price cut ) and you would stay closer to your initial budget.

That's pretty good advice, but if the budget can be increased go with the D90, simply because it'll last you longer as the performance overall is better than the D80.
