/p/

Im thinking about either getting a Nikon D40 or a Canon EOS 350D.

If you had a choice, which one of these would you buy?
>> Anonymous
I'd buy the 350D. It's got 8 megapixels compared to 6 megapixels with the D40. (which is very disappointing for a dslr.)

All the cool kids on Deviant Art use the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT series.

Silver bodies feel good, man.

I'm leaning towards the XTi just because I don't like the tiny screen or controls of the XT.

I chose the XTi over the XT because of ergonomics and the improved menu system, as well as the slightly remodeled grip, but I still wouldnt get a D40 over an XT

>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
Unless you never plan to upgrade, either camera is fine.
Remember, the main weakness with the d40 is the limited autofocus. If you know you plan to need fast primes, like for shooting indoors, you may want to skip it, although they are slowly introducing more primes with af motors. Otherwise, it's all pretty much just personal preference.

That's a Sigma. If you're not going to put Nikkors on the front, there's no point in buying a Nikon body.

>>197660
You're a stupid scenefag. Silver cameras are for grandmas. Silver screams "ignorant consumer" and usually "hit me for spending $1000 on a DSLR when all I needed was a point-n-shoot".

anyway, where's the best place to look for/buy a cheap XT?

>>197724
If anything, silver is a better color than black for photography equipment, because it attracts less sunlight, therefore generates less heat. Heat distorts image quality, hence why L telephotos are white.
>> Anonymous
>>197726

>> okto
>>197727
Point taken. Replace all instances of "silver" with "silver-painted" in my previous post. All negativity and condescension still apply.
>> Anonymous
>>197733
Why? It's just a stupid, irrational prejudice coming from how all non-consumer SLRs are black. It doesn't matter what color the camera is; if the 1Ds Mk. III, D3, D300, 40D, etc. were silver and only the Rebel was available in black, you'd be talking the other way around.

And no, I don't own a silver camera. Actually, except for point and shoots, I don't think I've ever shot with a camera that wasn't black.
>> okto
>>197743
If all racists wore pointy hats, wouldn't you associate pointy hats with racism? Most of my prejudice is due to a personal belief that silver paint is the penultimate tackiness, second only to gold (paint or real—gold is hideous). Think about all the cheap shitty consumer electronics you've used. What color do they tend to be? Thus, silver on electronics associates to shitty flimsiness.
>> Anonymous
>>197724That's a Sigma. If you're not going to put Nikkors on the front, there's no point in buying a Nikon body.

because Nikon in all their wisdom decided to castrate the low end bodies

>>197728pay $500 for a $300 lens? Sure.

it will be like.. $350-400
>> Anonymous
I have a silver rebel xt. I didn't keep the kit lens on. I wish I had gotten black in retrospect though
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
Silver is the new Beige.

Myself, I'd prefer black even if high-end stuff was typically non-black. Hell, I'm rather unhappy that Canon L lenses aren't just plain black. It's sooo much nicer.
>> Anonymous
>>197731
L lenses are white for the branding. If heat dissipation was really an issue, wouldn't the rest of the L series and other manufacturer's long telephotos be white as well?
>> Anonymous
>>197755

>> Anonymous
>>197758L lenses are white for the branding

there's that

>> If heat dissipation was really an issue, wouldn't the rest of the L series (...) be white as well?

all the L teles, super teles are white, the black ones are small (standard) zooms which serve little purpose for the application

there's the 200mm that's black but 200mm is too damn short for what they're used for

>> and other manufacturer's long telephotos be white as well?

long telephotos = canon, they kind of own that segment until nikon deems it profitable to get into it
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
>>197758
Telephoto lenses are long. Anything below 70mm doesn't create enough surface area to create heat issues.
>> Anonymous
>>197759Soccer moms don't care about old lenses.

you just called every d40/d40x/d60 owner a soccer mom

congratulations, your brand consists of 67% soccer moms

at least pentax/sony/olympus/canon soccer moms will have cheap, fast primes to use
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
>>197733
I was given the XT about two and a half years old as a gift, so I didn't have much choice in the color. Either way, I don't see how this effects anything to do with photography. More like a personal prejudice, it seems.
>> Anonymous
I liked my original Rebel's silver body.
>> Anonymous
>>197763you just called every d40/d40x/d60 owner a soccer mom

Because 90% of them are either soccer moms or point and shooters who just leave the camera on autopilot.

>>at least pentax/sony/olympus/canon soccer moms will have cheap, fast primes to use

Try explaining to that soccer mom why she should spend more money on a fancy lens that doesn't even zoom and she'll look at you like you're a fucking retard. Nikon's target audience doesn't give a shit about primes.
>> Anonymous
>>197763

I'm a Nikonfag, and 98% of everyone who owns a D40/D40x/D60 is either a hipster faggot or a soccer mom who thinks she can take OMGPRO pictures.

I'm not going to lie, it's a shame.

But there's a lot of faggot hipsters who buy digital rebels, too.

I for one wish people would stop using a segment of a product's previous buyers or retarded behaviour of a user segment as a relevant variable in the actual function of a device used to capture light.

>>197832
Isn't the target segment's needs the basis for the design of the functionality of a product in the first place?

>>197821Nikon's target audience doesn't give a shit about primes.

No denying the D40/40X/60 is a soccermom cam, but in what way is the XT/XTi series crippled such that it is strictly a "hipster camera"? It's not like it has insta-lomo mode or some shit.
>> Anonymous
>>197865that's a great philosophy
Nikon's got the zooms that anyone buying the D40 cares about covered with cheap DX and nicer AF-S or VR lenses, but the horrid sales of the D40/D60 really show that users just can't accept the lack of a screw drive.

That doesn't hold water. The camera originally wasn't as cheap as it is right now. It was made to be a cheap dslr, but nowhere as it is now. It didn't start like this.
>> Anonymous
Id go with the nikon. I like their optics better, and a HUGE plus for most people... they use SD cards. Unless you're looking at the XSi(more $$$ and a bitch to find right now), if you get a canon you're going to be stuck with an older, nearly dead in all but professional, memory standard.

I like black. Wouldn't pay extra for silver.
Better UI than the d40, imo.
More lenses.
and I just simply like Canon.

D40. The XT feels like a plastic piece of shit and is so old it's ridiculous. I wouldn't usually recommend a body based on tech, but seriously, the XT is SOOOOO FUCKING OLD. Canon also has gross menus and icky button placement.

Case in point: A photographer I met with a dominant left eye says he cannot even use Canon bodies because his nose hits a button on the back when his eye is to the viewfinder. Not even a jewnose, lulz

Telephoto lenses are a lot more sensitive to thermal expansion of the lens elements, which is why only the longer L lenses are white. Same reason as everyone else's long telephotos are white.
