So yeah, I took this with my D300, which is a pretty snazzy camera. Question is, the photo looks like shit at native size. Is there ANY camera out there that can actually take photos that are tolerable at their original 12+ megapixel resolution?

I feel like I'm cheating when I load up the RAW in Photoshop, then resize it down and run a sharpening filter on it.

OH and, I am pretty set on getting the SB-800 speedlight. I assume this is a good idea since I love shooting indoors. But the only lens I've got is the 50mm f/1.4. What is a good zoom lens to upgrade to that will provide similar sharpness and overall quality?

And I accidentally pressed "submit." Sorry.

Very expensive ones. Stick with primes. A 35, 30, 28 or 24 will do you as a main lens, then later something a little wider (e.g. a 20mm) if you want that.

With enough light, just about every dSLR.

RAW applies 0 sharpening, so you're not cheating or anything, unless you want to do it Depressed Cheesecake style.

Did I make a mistake in getting a 50mm instead of a 35mm since the D300 has an APS-C sensor? I don't understand the math/technology, but apparently 35mm is equivalent to 50mm (53mm) on such a camera?

50mm is longer, 35mm will be wider.

There's no right or wrong, just a personal preference.

More money than sense.
