Most important advice is to learn more
Lighting is everything in pictures, so learn how the flash will make or break your picture, Also the farther away the flash is from your line of sight, generally the better, Hence bouncing if its on camera etc.
With digital camera's they can compensate for the color of indoor lights, but the flash is daylight balanced, So when using the flash all your indoor lights are going to look yellow (with flash white balance (most camera's auto pick that)
So understanding how much light your background may contribute is the big trick, If your flash is going to be 90% it may produce a completely different picture than if you only want about a 50% fill (Fill flash = trickiest part of photography)
