Photographers!

I'm looking for a new lens for my EOS 30D. Having already covered the bottom half of the spectrum (macro + the default 50-80mm), I want something to help me get shots at medium and long range. Also needed for a few fashion shows i'm going to be photographing over the next 6 months or so.

So far my mind is on the superb white 70-200 made by canon (op picture)

opinions/advice?

Can't go wrong with either version of it. f/2.8 is great if you can afford it.

Yeah, the opinions on an L lens are pretty much gonna be somewhere between "Great" and "Fucking great"

i owned the F4 version, and it rocked.
i have used sigma's 70-200 2.8 too, and it also
was a great lens.

please somebody tell me what the "L" stands for?

do the sigma lenses all fit on EOS fit cameras?

No idea what the L stands for, but sigma makes canon mount and nikon mount lens.

Officially, I don't think it means anything, but Canon users tend to refer to the "L" class lenses as "Luxury" lenses.

"L" stands for "Luxury". They are Canon's
top-of-the-line lenses.
Sigma is a third-party manufacturer of lenses for a variety of camera makers(they also have their own line of Sigma DSLR cameras.)
Sigma makes lenses that cover a wide range of focal lengths. There are some hidden gems that will cost you a lot less than the lenses produced by the camera makers themselves.
Do some research, and look around.
fredmiranda.com is a handy place to start...

argh I love/hate amazon!

I tried looking up the 70-200mm beaut i posted above, and it came up with about 5 different items+prices, ranging from £490 ish up to and over £1.5k!! trés ridiculous, no?

Sucks because (obviously) I want the big, shiny kit, but on the other hand, I dont want to turn into one of these guys you see with huge lenses, flash etc and taking shit pics.. :(

I'll go down my local retailer ASAP and check out the sigma (and canon) shizzle, links for the 70-200 on amazon below, advice on possible buy plz :D

i've checked out one of my school's Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L. it's one of the sharpest lenses i've used.

B&H is a good site to get info and specs on most-all camera stuff. you might find it cheaper elsewhere, but their prices are pretty reliable.

Get a Quantaray (Sigma) lens. $175 for a 70-300, does everything the Canon does at a fraction of the price.

LOL

First off its f4-5.6, Second off, its AF speed is atrocious, And its not nearly as sharp as the Canon or Nikon 70-200 F2.8's.

If he's going to go Sigma, he should at least get the 70-200/2.8 DG MACRO. Don't suggest such a shit lens.

For fashion shows, while expensive lenses are great, you should worry about a good flash first. Maybe a 70-200/4 and a 430EX would be a good idea, but without IS a monopod becomes important too.

Photography is expensive D:
