Why are some camera lenses so expensive compared to others?

Aren't they all glass?

If one lens making technique is the best, why don't even the cheapest cameras use that technique, if the materials are glass?
>> Anonymous
Manufacturing processes vary from lens to lens, some cost quite a bit more than others. Not to mention that some lenses are made to do drastically different things than others.

0/10 but I always reply to trolls so:

Different glass is needed for different lenses, and sometimes that glass is expensive (well it's all expensive, just to varying degrees). You also need different amounts of glass.

Also a lot of the expense involved is labor - some elements have to be ground by hand by experienced craftsmen, while others can be pressed out of plastic on a conveyor belt. The prices reflect this.

and of course, research and development. The Nikkor 70-300 f/4-5.6 is relatively cheap compared to the Nikkor 70-300 f/4-5.6 VR. The 50mm f/1.8 is cheap because it hasn't changed much in decades. Lenses with aspherical elements are more expensive than those without, etc.

I'm sure the raw manufacturing cost of this stuff is much lower than the retail value because they can actually have a sort of defect margin. The cost of engineering spreads out evenly in mass production.

Any modern normal lens - 50/2, 50/1.4 etc - from any maker will look virtually indistiguishable as all are computer optimized multicoated double gauss derived (essentially) symetrical lenses.

That one actually makes sense, though.

Expensive clothes are bullshit, for the most part (things that are custom-made are a different story, of course), you're just paying to be "cool". Not to say that I don't blow money on nice stuff, since it's necessary for not looking like a loser, but there's nothing inherent in designer clothes that should make them cost so much. I personally tend to wear a lot of vintage stuff, anyway, 'cause it's nicely made here in the US of A, rather than being expensive shit made in some sweatshop right alongside wal-mart trash.

At that point, you're paying for the brand and the statement rather than the clothes and for some people, it's worth their money. Kinda like iPods and Apple shit. And other haute couture shit.

Anything under $1000 an item is made in the same third-world shitholes as cheap shit, unless the brand banks on country of origin as part of their brand image, so tailors are irrelevant. Designers, sure, but the amount they make and the amount they sell are pretty disparate. (Not to mention they're making obscene amounts, anyway.)

Like I said, doesn't stop me from blowing cash on the shit, just like the cash I blew today on a new MacBook Pro.

The point, though, is that you're not really getting a functional or tangible benefit from buying designer clothes. Quality cameras and optics are a totally different story, if we bought clothes on the same basis, we'd all be wearing military shit that's built like a tank and has 20 pockets.

So true. Try arguing it with a pimp though. I got a broken wrist and a slashed leg when I tried. :(
