oh yeah and any suggestions on getting started in photography i have a 1.3 and 2 mp camera phones and i just got rid of a cheap 6.1 that i gave to my little sister so honestly i have no idea what im doing please help any advice is appreciated

If the place was selling the battery and charger separate from the camera, there's a good chance you've been ripped off.

QFT

Calling the purchaser up afterwards and encouraging them to "upgrade" by selling them the bits that come shrinkwrapped in the box, like the battery and charger, is a pretty common technique by the lowlifes of the camera world. http://www.resellerratings.com is your friend.

Everything might work out okay with your purchase. But if a deal seems too good to be true, there's a good chance that it is.

well i went an ordered the camera and im getting a battery from another site now..

how do i get into photography
>> ac

1. Take a shit-ton of pictures.
2. Look at pictures other people have taken. If there are pictures you like, try to make pictures like the ones you like. Not *exactly* like the ones you like, mind you, but just look at what worked for those people.
3. Read some books. If you're in an area with libraries, they probably have library book sales every once in a while. I've got a 5-shelf bookcase full of photography books I've bought at those sorts of sales. I've mostly stopped buying the "Photomotography 4 n00bs, lol" type books and am more buying books of photos rather than books on photography nowadays (see step 2).
4. Take a shit-ton more pictures, now that you know what you're doing.
5. ???
6. Don't expect to profit. It's hard to make money as a photographer.

profit.. i doubt it but im in the army and just figured it would be nice if i got into at least one healthy hobby that im interested in before i get killed plus when i go to iraq i can take cool pictures

Oh man WHY don't people check resellerratings.com

Bestpricecamera's is a SCAM site, they will sell you your camera, but thats it, you won't get an official warranty with it or anything
You would be better off buying it from bestbuy or something.

Also D40 only works with AF-S lenses, so buy accordingly

i would have checked the site but i had already ordered the camera before even starting the thread i figured it wasnt the best deal but what can i say

the package comes with a 300mm lens will i need anything better? i honestly as you can tell have no idea what im doing

There you go. B&H is reputable, and I beat your top price by a nickel.

Well, not quite. You're going to have to buy a memory card with that, and you'd probably do well to buy an extra battery (it comes with one battery and a charger, but it's always good to have a second battery charged up). And there's also shipping. But it's certainly close to the $550 range, and I doubt you're going to find a significantly better price at any store not trying to scam you.

You *probably* won't need more than the 18-55mm. However, since you mentioned that you were in the army, it might make sense to invest in a longer telephoto or telephoto-zoom like the 70-300, but you certainly don't want that as your only lens. But a telephoto lens would be quite helpful for getting shots with less chance of, you know, getting shot yourself.

well i found a ritz camera back home that has it in stock for 599 so i figure after shipping and everything is done it will be about the same

and i have a year till im done with my new mos training SO i have plenty of time to invest in this thing

Even better. You can walk right out with them and if they try to scam you, you can punch them in the face in person. ;)

well honestly as a newbie you should have learned the basics with the camera you gave to your little sister before diving in, or if it doesn't have a manual mode or whatever, then maybe read up about cameras before just ordering random stuff.

Jebuz...

don't ever buy a camera that's already been opened and unpackaged by someone else... buy it like Nikon intended you to have it with.

I'll have to agree with the sentiment that you need to do alotof reading up on photography and SLRs unless of course you plan on leaving the thing on 'Auto' the entire time... in which case... why the bloody hell bother with a SLR and why not just buy a top notch 11x P&S?

Check 'dummy's guide to photography'... you'll be able to find on a torrent anywhere. It's indepth enough to get you far but not too expert as to lose your attention.

obviously that's only a starting point and shouldnt be the only thing you read... but getting dirty with the camera yourself can be difficult if you don't have alot of theory.

well, the higher end cameras are built like a rock (in general), so buying them used is very viable and a good way to save money. just make sure it comes with everything. my dad bought a SLR from circa 1990 and its still in perfect working condition, lens and all.

well i didnt know the site was selling open products... i had no idea how these things where sold hence why i asked for help in making the purchase

and i did use my old camera for a good bit ive had it almost a year i just felt id like to get serious about buying a camera and taking more artistic photos instead of random pictures of vacations and family get togethers

anyway i had my girl back home pick up a d40 from ritz it should be here soon till then im going to go look for some books
