I have had the exact same problem. Here's what you do, and, I know it sounds odd.
Grab a pencil with a nice rubbery eraser. Not one of the stiff shitty erasers, but a good pliable one. Remove your lense, and rub the contacts with the eraser. Problem solved. I was told that by a guy at Best Buy and National Camera. I tried it and my D80 hasn't done it since then.
Apperently the eraser just cleans off the dirty contacts that are preventing your camera from reading the lense correctly. Give it a try and let me know if it works.
