I need your help /p/,

What should I buy : Sony dslr A200 or Canon Digital Rebel XTi ?
>> Anonymous
DSLRs are overrated. Have you looked into CHDK?
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
It can give you features on a P&S that you won't get on a DSLR.
>> Anonymous
>>177414
lawl, that's only good if you can't afford a dSLR.

OP: both are good choices
>> Anonymous
>>177415

You don't really help me ;)
>> Anonymous
>>177416
neither is a bad choice
>> Anonymous
sony is good for making failstation only
>> Anonymous
I would get the A200 over the XTi. Better quality across the board.
>> Anonymous
Try out both in a camera store and figure out which one feels better. Otherwise they're pretty similar.
>> Anonymous
a200.

Sony is coming out with some amazing stuff lately and the minolta back catalog is drool worthy.
>> Anonymous
also, wtf?

a entry level dslr thread where people aren't flaming sony?
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
IMO the sonys have better ergonomics than canon, but make sure you spend a while in a few stores playing with both (and vertical grips if you want/need/can) to find out which is the most comfortable.

For beginners both canon and sony offer a wide array of standard and specalist lenses and accessories.

If this is your first dSLR or camera, there is little difference between the two.
>> Anonymous
except that sony sucks shit
>> Anonymous
Butterfly, isn't the A200 like a D50 -> D40 thing, i.e. an "upgrade" that actually makes the camera worse?

(I don't know, I'm asking.)

>>177473
Except that you know nothing about cameras or are being willfully ignorant and need to get the fuck out.
>> Anonymous
sorry, canon has a better camera than sony at any given price point
>> Anonymous
canon has some exotic glass, but will you ever own/need to own a 600/4?
>> Anonymous
>>177509
No, you won't need a 600 f4, but canon's whole lens lineup is quite extraordinary.
>> Anonymous
>>177534
So cameras ARE like cars: men buy them to enhance their manhood and one must have at least v8 and 250 bhp even though half of that would be enough for almost anyone, almost anytime. Which are ricer cameras and which good ole muscle cars?
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
>>177557
But in this analogy, a nice car is the same price as a car that is "good enough"

Not really, it removed a few things i liked from the A100 but its a general makeover of the previous model, nothing serious is missing.

The inclusion of a factory VG is the only thing that i'd want from it.

>>177476
I know you're trolling, but i dont know the canon price points. The A200 is again similar to the D80 in terms of performance, but for closer to D40X price.

dpreview hasnt covered the 450D, but based on the specs, they look similar with the A200 slaughtering the 450D on price.

*everyone = canikon, i dont pay attention to olympus/pentax/sigma because no one ever brings them up.

But then, lenses lol...
>> Anonymous
>>177590

*sigh* now I have school you on Sony?

You realize the A200 is the bottom of the barrel, stripped and castrated model to compete at the BOTTOM of the ladder, yes?

It's there to cut off Olympus's E-420, E-520. Nikon's D60, and guess what? The Canon Rebel XTi.

>> A200 : $500-600

Thank you, the Canon Rebel XTi is at $550.

How the fuck are you going to compare the lowest end Sony DSLR to the brand spanking new mid grade consumer from Canon? (The XSi)

Where is Live View in the A200? Where is 14-bit A/D? Where is the 3.0" screen?

The A350 is at the $800 range and THAT is Sony's player competing directly against Canon's Rebel XSi and Nikon's D80 replacement.

Are you just that retarded to say some shit like this?

>> but based on the specs, they look similar with the A200 slaughtering the 450D on price.

That's like saying a Nikon D40 is similar to a D200 but it's at half the price.

Now you're just going to be a little bitch and say you're trolling.

I spoke too early.

i'll post some zeiss sex later.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>177599
No im going to say when i compared the specs the XSi(D450) had 2 more MP (oh wowz) slightly worse drive functions and then i stopped caring.

If it has live view or anything special, i didnt see it so i didnt include it.

The A200 isnt years old either.

>>177605No im going to say when i compared the specs the XSi(D450) had 2 more MP (oh wowz) slightly worse drive functions and then i stopped caring.

Oh, and that lets you spout of bullshit like you said earlier so I can put that shit back in your mouth. Awesome.

The XSi outclasses the A200 in every single way. The A350 and A300 are the ones competing with it and had you said "Hey dudes! You can get an A300 for $100 less than the XSi and it has the same features!" I wouldn't have said shit.

But you had to be an ignorant little bitch.

>> The A200 isnt years old either.

Yeah.. and age hasn't stopped Nikon from selling the D40 or Canon with the XT.

Fact of the matter is, it's to be compared with the XTi in price and features. Hell, it even offers one thing more for the same price, sensor shift.

Sit down now.

When it comes down to it, you want a camera to take the best looking photos possible. Sony has shitty high iso performance and we've seen that on this board over and over and over and over again. That's the biggest reason to grab the canon over the sony.
>> Anonymous
>>177612

According to Butterfly, the Sony A700 has "similar performance" to the Nikon D300. But for $400 less!
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>177607
You could have said that politly and i'd have appologised for missing the live view feature and would have agreed that it should be compared to the A300/350 and the A200 to the XTi.

These are just the accessories sony launched with the a100 2 years ago.

Since then sony has added countless accessories, new lenses, and continual upgrades.

god damnit, I was right about to buy the A200. I realized OMG BODY + KIT LENS FOR <$500!

But then I realized the 18-70mm kit lens is complete shit, especially regarding CAs: http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/47-sony-alpha-aps-c/140-sony-18-70mm-f35-56-dt-review--lab-test-repo
rt?start=1

plus you can't buy the A200 as body only.

i refuse to buy a canon NONCONFORMIST ANARCHY PUNK REBEL XXXXXXTREEEME XXXXTI because of how shitty and fugly it looks and how gay and red its name and label are.

2. Find a 20D for less than $500
3. Buy it.

istortions and vignetting are about in line with the rest of the gang, maybe even slightly better. However, lateral CAs (parasitary color shadows at the image borders) are extremely pronounced with a width up to 4(!)px on the A700. This should be a show-stopper for those who prefer JPEGs straight from the camera because lateral CAs do also reduce the perceived sharpness. This may still have all worked out on the old 6mp DSLRs years ago but on an Alpha 100 and Alpha 700 this is far beyond the edge. Mechanically it is one of the better kit zoom lenses out there but it isn't something to rave about either.

Bad CA (which is fairly easy to fix) seems to be the only problem, and for a kitlens that isnt that bad.

But not buying into an SLR system because the kitlens is shit a pretty fucking stupid idea.
>> Anonymous
>>178190
The A700 is the only camera, Sony or no, to do something so ass stupid as to put noise reduction on "raw" files. A100/A200/anything else is fine.
>> Anonymous
>>179093

besides CAs, the resolution scores are also pretty bad, or at least far worse than any other kit lens on photozone.de

well if you're new to DSLRs and want to save money like me, a wasted $100 kit lens is pretty influential.

can you recommend a different lens that I can buy to replace the kit lens? All ive seen is these $500 carl zeiss lenses which are out of my price range. i do like this camera and im willing to disregard high ISO suckage, but If i cant find the right lens to make this work I can't get the sony.

50/1.7 minolta (shouldnt cost more than $60 used)

>>179132

Look into Olympus' lower-end DSLRs too. I'd put 'em up there with Sony and some of the glass (45-150mm f3.5-4.5) that comes with some of the kits is excellent.

1. Lenses are not their test results. Go use Flickr for the one thing it's good for: search for the lens. Figure out what its look is. If you like it, it doesn't matter how much or how little it resolves. And CAs can be dealt with in post.

But like Butterfly said, the 50/1.7. And a wider prime, either normal or a moderate wide, as a standard lens, and maybe something a little wider or longer, and you're set for most types of photography.

If you pester me enough i can repost my gallery, the japan trip is taken with the 11-18 and the kit 18-70 (and a the very end a shit 100-300).

To be nonconformist, you have to avoid not canon, but nikon, considering the enormous amount of OLD NIKONS CAN DRIVE NAILS and 'nikon was king during the era of film' kind of bullshit that brand has backing it.

If you care so much about being 'different', take a look at Pentax. For your own sake though, avoid 4/3rds.

To be fair, I sort of agree with this. I like the Canon EOS digital series but the 'Digital Rebel XTi' fuckery is very grating. Thankfully over here they just call them the 350D, 400D, 450D, 5D, 1Ds Mark II, etc.
