Should I? Anonymous
Hey /p/, recently, my point and shoot camera (Sony Cybershot DSC- T11) started to develop lines in all of my pictures I've been taking. Since they did not release this camera in the states, I can't get really get it repaired. So, I decided to upgrade my camera and was thinking about getting the Nikon P5100. What does /p/ think? I would like to be able to stuff the camera in my jeans if possible. And if not approved of this upgrade, what should I get?
Bonus: White camera is a plus. =]
Pic related.

white camera is a plus? fuck you
>> Anonymous
Well, okay. Fine, forget the white camera then.

If color is a consideration for you, then the Nikon will be fine.

isn't the p5100 the equivalent of the g9, minus raw

i would get it because it's mad cheap compared to the g9
>> Anonymous
That's what I've been reading about the g9. Now, I'm a newb when it comes to photography, but I'm trying to learn about photography and be a "better than average" type of shooter. But yeah, what does /p/ think about the Nikon s600? It turns on really fast. I just heard about it too. =]

the p5100 is still superior

unless you're going for small size
>> Anonymous
Okay. Screw the s600. Now I'm debating between the g9 and the p5100. Price is not really a problem. What's raw?

Yeah, I see the p5100 is superior in price (cheaper)and power. But what about the g9? Is taking raw pictures really important and a big factor in the price it's asking for?

RAW is the raw sensor data straight out of the chip with no processing done to it at all. Processing like, for instance, applying the white balance or vibrancy settings and so forth to the picture. If you shoot JPEGs, you have to make sure that you have an appropriate white balance for your shot set beforehand. If you shoot RAW, you never have to worry about it.

Additionally, RAW gives you a couple extra stops of leeway on your exposure because the sensor records more data than can be stored in a JPEG.

Finally, no quality hit from JPEG. Whenever you open, edit, and resave a JPEG, it loses a little more quality--after three or four rounds of this, it'll look like ass. With a RAW, you're always starting from a pristine copy.

(That last isn't a huge advantage if you shoot best-quality JPEGs, but the others are)

i'm a huge canonfag and i wouldn't buy it because it's fucking $500

no problem with the p5100 though

I see, thanks for clearing that up for me. I kind of don't think being able to shoot raw will opt me for forking out about $150 more just to have that. I'm no pro at taking pictures.
>>151641
Yeah, that price tag is a killer.

Yeah, I'd recommend against the Canon G-series. If you're going to spend that much money, you could just get an SLR, which would be better in all but two ways I can think of.

I agree with you there. P5100 it is then! Than's /p/ for helping me make my choice. Now, all I need to do is find it. Should I do retail? Or the web? (Purchasing of course)

Interwebs unless you have a good camera store in your area (non-chain) that you want to support.

Be sure to check resellerratings.com if a price seems really good. adorama.com and bhphotovideo.com are good places to buy from.

Fuck P5100. It's so unresponsive and slow that it made me rage when I tried shooting with it. Nikon seems to think it's still 1997 and 4-second startup time is A-OK.

G9 owner^

can you put another firmware in the nikon
>> Anonymous
>>151698
Get a used G7. It's cheaper and CHDK (a canon firmware hack) is a huge plus. You get RAWs, faster and slower shutterspeeds, decent bracketing, etc.

Hmm... I think that might be too advanced for me... I won't know how to use it to it's full potential. In fact, I don't even think I know how to use any camera to it's full potential. And I don't think I know how to use the things you mentioned much. I'll definately look into it. Thanks. =]

or he could get a A650 IS which is a G9 minus RAW and hotshoe but with a flip screen

I don't think those are the only differences. And A650 might be a bit thick for storing in a jeans pocket comfortably.

God I fucking hate those gearfags on dpreview.
>> Anonymous

internals are the same. lens, processor, sensor

it's only thicker because of the grip

and i wouldn't call the g9 pocketable, lol
