Its a major cliche, and seems to impress non photographers, and art critics.

But basically people shots are always more interesting than non people, Also the texture and imperfections of the skin / eyes etc impresses the critics, and if you can get your lighting down pat will make you look like a pro.

That said I think its boring and overused. "perhaps the same could be said of all photography"
