just got a leica lux-4 for my trip to tokyo.
i wanted something versatile and didn't feel like lugging my d-70 everywhere.
any suggestions or good stories?

i try to avoid point and shoots with telescoping lenses but figured why not this time. i just hope it performs.

Return it, get the Panasonic LX3. Same guts, better body, lower price tag.

what about the lens?
>> Anonymous
>>293323
Same lens, designed by Leica, built by Panasonic, on both of them.

Only difference is the body (Panasonic has a grip, Leica doesn't) and the JPEG processing algorithms.
>> Anonymous
>>293323
they are the same camera, lens included.
>> Anonymous
Supposedly the Leica has better JPG processing, but that's about it.
>> Anonymous
the price difference wasn't too much, about $100. so i'm sticking with it.

Huh, then you've either gotten very lucky on the Leica or the Panasonic was overpriced. Usually the Leica digicams sell for 50-100% more than their Panasonic counterparts.

Does the panasonic take RAW?
I've also been considering replacing my d80 with this, and focusing on film for serious shooting.. very incovenient having a dslr whenever you need to shoot

>Does the panasonic take RAW?
Yes. Though don't expect DSLR speed when dealing with raws.

>I've also been considering replacing my d80 with this

This sounds quite stupid to me, but whatever floats your boat.

well the only plus of the dslr is the convenience, for when I want to shoot LOTS of pictures (ie. traveling, just for every day life stuff)
If I wanted serious quality pictures, I would shoot film anyway, so it kinda takes away the point of shooting dslr. it's not like I dont have access to film processing/printing, so I don't need thousands of dollars locked up on a big camera with all that power I don't need.

or should I get a p&s on top of the dslr?

never shot medium format/made large prints with film before.

DSLRs exceed medium format when it comes to technical image quality, but whatever floats your boat.

I'd go for the LX3, but I like these little cameras myself: silent shutters and vast depth of field are delicious.

digital outresolves film

full frame digital outresolves medium format film

no, YOU have no idea what you're talking about. can only make large prints on film... fucking idiot
>> Anonymous

... though to be honest I don't quite get how a D80 plus something like a 28/2.8 would be too inconvenient to toss on a shoulder strap most of the time.

>>293382
MF film is overrated. It has to be EXTREMELY carefully processed and scanned/optically printed to get more quality than a 10-15 megapixel DSLR. (Not to mention that 99% of /p/ never printed anything larger than 13x18")

Really credible source, calling G10s equal or better then Hasselblad's H2.

Did you even READ that article? They raise some perfectly valid points.

You know, I've only seen one refutation of that page. It was using a 4x5 camera, and I'm pretty sure the comparison camera was an old-school 6MP APS-C DSLR rather than medium format vs FF digital. And it was done by Ken Rockwell.

He's got a more recent shot up right now where you can mouseover to flip between a shot from a D3 and a film scan from an old Kodak. The Kodak seems to win, but I'm guessing Rockwell shot the D3 in low-quality JPEG mode, since he tends to favor that.

One of these days, I should really go out with my film and digital SLRs and do my own comparison...

and a 1Ds costs how much?

entry point for 120 film is much lower. and better quality than their comparative dslrs.
>> Anonymous
>> Nevertheless I knew when I embarked on this new comparison that if I didn't have a drum scan done there would be those that would find this to be a flaw in my methodology. So I contacted one of the best drum scanning experts in the U.S.A. and had him produce the highest quality drum scan possible. This one frame scan alone costs $300.

>and a 1Ds costs how much?
For the original 1Ds Mark I that he's comparing in this review? Under $2000.

For one with equivalent resolution? They don't have an 11MP model for sale nowadays, but you can get a 12MP model for $1300 and a 10MP model for $500.

anyone who says film beats digital for sheer resolution and image quality today is a fucking idior or a troll

your D40's auto-mode *is* pretty good.

... Oh, and *good* medium format gear still isn't what I'd call cheap. A basic kit is less than a used full frame DSLR, but medium format lenses get pretty pricey pretty quickly, and medium format film is about twice as expensive as 35mm from a per-frame standpoint.

Digital SLR, sorry. Those words seem to have gotten lost in the editing stage.

good try, faggot

you must be new around here. i've posted that image numerous times in the past and keep calling other faggots like you out in those "post your gear" threads because no one has the balls to show the gear they have.

oh, and i've started wartermarking it because you all know how /p/ is so keen on reposting stuff

pretty cute that you won't show what you really have though. i'm guessing it's a Rebel with a 50mm

OP is troll or massive idiot

For the price of the Leica he could have bought a newer DSLR and use D70 lenses or bought new (and actually quite nice) lens to use on current d70
>> Anonymous
>>293569

in his defense, you could sell all of those and buy all of my gear like 5-8 times over

but yeah.. not bragging or anything but i think i have the most complete and badass kit on /p/. short of Depressed Cheesecake who takes it up the ass by a woman to borrow her expensive toys
