The first thing you'll need is a tripod, main thing is to get something to zoom and do a long exposure to capture the details. How do you like the xsi btw?

Any real telescope and your kit lens.
Please don't buy a telephoto lens to do astro photography.

You also need a little computer/box that automatically tracks/follows the orbit of the moon

Right

Wrong. The moon is fucking bright. We're talking F/8, 1/400 at 400 ISO. Pic related, it's me and my heat distortion.

anyone recommend a telescope for this then, that wont break the bank?

I recommend a "hubble" it's a fairly good telescope you can pick up on ebay for cheap. It's made by a company called Naasah.

Naw dude Hubble sux that thing has crazy spherical aberration problems because of the flawed mirror (also I heard Hubble has shitty borkeh)

lots of astrophotographers use sharp telephoto primes instead of telescopes. granted, it's all wide field imagery.

still, great lenses have better coma correction and are sharper than a lot of the cheaper telescopes.

oh man that's some nice coma correction

this will go down history with the likes of cromabs and borkeh

this is what you want

500mm and 1000mm with 2x converter

it's possible to shoot over the ocean but the earth curvature doesn't allow it

this configuration is specially suitable for candid shoting at beach. Only beach and very sunny places due to the little minimum apperture (maybe F8? F11?)

and some 2x converters

Don't forget combining

I have used it on the moon, and it does reduce noise. The downside is the amount of time spent lining images up (free software doesn't always do that good of a job).
