Hey /p/.

I'm being given a camera soon. It's an Olympus E500 with a pair of 14-45mm and 40-150mm lenses. It's my first DSLR, and as such, also my first foray into upper level photography. I like to paint and sketch scenery, and take pictures with my little Cybershot, but don't have any experience with "real" cameras.

I guess I have a few things to ask.

-What can I expect from this camera? Is it a decent place to start?
-What do you really look for in a DSLR?
-Do you think I should get a hot shoe flash?
-What will each lens be best suited to? And for what reasons would I want to upgrade lenses, and to what?

Thanks a lot. :)

Sure is! More than enough for you.

> What do you really look for in a DSLR?
Ergonomic, build quality, image quality, speed...

> Do you think I should get a hot shoe flash?
Not until you know that you need it...

> What will each lens be best suited to?
Just put them on and you'll instantly see what they are for.

> And for what reasons would I want to upgrade lenses, and to what?
Don't. Just play around with what you have. Come back after a month or two and tell us what and why you weren't able to shoot.

Hey, thanks for the response. That first site offers a lot of help and insight on the quirks of the camera. Better to hear straight from people who own it than from an article trying to sell you the thing, you know?

I'll post some more once I finally get my hands on it.
