(I.E., it's slow as shit on a D50, but nearly as fast as an AF-S on my D2 or my F100, and I suspect the D300/700 probably AFs as fast as the F100) If you can find a nice second-hand AF-S 80-200, it's worth looking into, as it's a great lens, slightly faster and sharper than the 80-200, but that fact has made used ones go for a similar price to the 80-200.
Come to think of it, though, used prices probably won't go up as fast as the prices on brand new ones, it might be a lot cheaper to go used for a month or two, until things sorta stabilize.
