Vivitar 285HV or Sunpak Super 383Manual flashes are perfectly adequate for most handheld use and cost peanuts.
Just picked up a 430EX mk1. It is well designed and amazingly intelligent at getting the lighting just right on short notice. Totally worth the $220 I spent on it.
