I'm still a beginner when it comes to photography. I got a bridge camera last Christmas so I could start to learn more about composition and the techniques of photography. I've been hoping to upgrade to a DSLR soon and saw this one on Craigslist. I think it's a good deal but I'm not sure.

Nikon D70 Digital SLR camera with 6.24 megapixel resolution with 18-70 mm F-3.5-4.5 G lens with cables, CD, Battery and Charger; Instruction book and Magic Lantern Book. Additional Nikon Autofocus lens 70-300 F-4-5.6 G(zoom). All are in excellent condition, the camera has been cleaned in the last month by professional camera shop. 350$

I'm afraid I don't know much about the D70 or if it would be a good choice for me though. Most of the beginner threads are either D40 or Digital Rebel and I don't read much about the D70 on here. Think I should contact this person? This is through Craigslist by the way. The price might slide a bit too with some negotiation. What does /p/ think of the D70 for someone who is still fairly new to photography but wants to upgrade to a system with a better sensor and design?

Mostly outdoors landscape and architecture photos. Some minor photography of people. I have a Nikon Speedlight actually but I'm nearly positive it is incompatible with this. It's a SB-E from my Film Nikon.
>> Anonymous
i guess the real question is how much are you willing to spend?
having a d70s, i would advice not paying more than $500 for that body+lens combo.
the d80 is only slightly better than the d70s. The d90 seems to be a more significant update ... tho of course it's also significantly more expensive.

also, if you are planning to buy that body, be sure to check the number of actuations. they are imbedded into the exif for the nikon d70. but not all exif readers will interpret the data. i recommend panda exif reader.
>> Anonymous
>>299432
That guy wants 350$ for that body and two lenses. I think I might be able to swing that much especially if it is a good deal. How many actuations do you think the camera will last for? I'll ask him for a test picture maybe so I can check for that information in the EXIF.

what the fuck lens is that? why is the zoom ring like that?

I guess I should have clarified that that picture was not from the craigslist listing. That was just a interesting picture I found while searching for D70s.

OBVIOUSLY, it's not a Nikon 70-300, i wouldn't have asked if it was

such a weird combination of different brands. Sigma focus ring, Sigma barrel markings, Nikon gold branding

this is a great resource for guestimating real-world actuation life-spans
http://olegkikin.com/shutterlife/

$350 is a good price for your first kit. but check the actuation count. If it's more than 20k i might be a little worried.

the best thing about getting a a kit zoom is buying a inexpensive prime and comparing the two. That's the fastest way I can think of to learn what is really important in buying lens.

I have a 50mm/1.8 F-mount MF lens in addition to those two so I would technically have three lenses for that camera. Although I bet that Lens wont be very easy to use without a cats-eye viewfinder.

I think I'll email this person now and see what they say. By the way do you think 350 is a very fair price or should I try to work them down a bit more?

manual focus? yeah, i would definately 'recommend' a katzeye if you're gonna do that.
i tried doing manual focus-only for few months i had my dslr (transition from noobie film slr). my shots kept on coming out wrong so i thought it was just a learning curve or diopter issue. then i ran into katzeyes. after researching some reviews, i bought it. no regrets whatsoever.

i just ebayd completed listings for the d70s and they end at about 360 for just the body and one ended at 500 for two zooms ... if he's as savy as i am at ebay searching, (he probably is since 350 isn't one of those arbitrary numbers), he probably won't go for less than 340. but again, check the actuations before talking about price.

This is one of the example images they sent. I don't see a number of actuations in the exif information however. They also said the camera is "pristine and in perfect working order. The only reason I am selling is that I am buying an SLR that does still and video. Both lenses are perfect and have had limited usage. I just had the sensor cleaned in the last month in preparation for the sale and that was $70. I have the original boxes and accessories for all."

Sounds like this is a great deal actually... I think... Now to round up some funds maybe.

Also I think the Exif should be preserved but I'm not sure. I've had problems in the past with Photoshop not saving the Exif information when I resized images before.

i'm getting a whole bunch of info but i don't see the actuation number. the shutter number should be near the bottom

if you still can't get any data ... have them send you another pic (be sure it is shot in jpg ... not raw and then converted in photoshop).

run it through this online exif view, the shutter count/number should be at the bottom

Ah! The shutter count is only 5400! It was there in the full size images. Oh man this is a tough call... I think I might buy it...

So what would the consensus be? Buy? I can't decide if it is worth it. I don't think I'll be finding another deal like this again.

Don't buy find a used 20D instead literally everything is better than that D70.
>> Anonymous
>>299767
The 20D might be better, I don't know, but the D70 is amazing except for iso performance, the small viewfinder an small display. Way better than a D40/x, D60 and D50.

>>299774

Not>>299767but.. The 20D is a small step above the D70 and even D80 in class.

It's not a big secret the CCDs in the D70 and D80 were never awesome. The 20D has the superior CMOS design for cleaner images.

More rugged and bigger body. Better, brighter, bigger viewfinder. Faster performance. Better autofocus.

The only thing I would like about a D70 is the sync speed.

Gosh I can't wait to get out and shoot with it. I hope it snows soon too...

The feeling of it when it snaps a picture just feels so solid and you get such feedback. It feels good. I dont know how to describe it. I've got a few manuals now to pour through to figure out how to work this thing. I already like how nicely placed the two wheels are for selecting shutter speed and aperture. Very nice for adjusting on the fly. Anyone else with a D70 that has some tips or tricks or suggestions?
