I know, once again, another soul that needs a new camera... Anonymous
I have a Canon SD400 and I've had enough of it, Im completely disgusted with how horrible its pictures quality is.

I used to have a Sony F717, which took really nice pictures actually, but it was just so incredibly bulky. I had extra lense and filters on it which made it even longer and bigger...

But the smallness of the SD400 doesnt cover for its horrid pictures and I realized Im taking less pictures because of it. I want to take more pictures again.

I was looking at the
- Canon PowerShot S3 IS
-Canon PowerShot G7 (know very little about this, I dont see how its better with a smaller lense)
-An SLR (digital?)

I just want to take pictures that have really rich colors (the CanonSD400 seems horrid in with this), crisp and sharp.

Extra features like focusing onto close objects and blurring into space well, or those light-trailing effects (maybe that's just ISO, Im a camera noob) would be great.

>> Compact cameras are sh it
Going from a Sony F717 to a Canon SD400 is a big step backwards. I tried many compact digital cameras and was disappointed with them all. I then bought an SLR, a Pentax K100D and have been very happy. Wish now I didn`t waste my money on all those compacts. My advise...buy an SLR.

I am really glad you are telling me about those compact Camera's are that way (usually crap). I have literally been just completely unhappy with so many of the compact camera's picture taking picture quality that I thought it required some sort of more talent to take pictures with them by adjusting the manual settings and stuff.

It seems that no matter how hard I try I just never get a picture that really shines, in my opinion.

I really liked the F717. It was just so huge and heavy that I wondered if it was worth lugging around. And of course, I only know now that to an extent, IT WAS!

Is there a specific SLR you reccomend, or are you pretty pleased with your one?

I just want a camera that can do everything, I know I lack in talent now being a noob n all, but even if I am, I loved that I could take good pictures and that I was *LEARNING* with a good tool.

I just got a g7 so I'll have something that will fit in my pocket. Great for macro. Noisy over iso 400, but 3200 can be fun if you need it. Raynox lenses are sweet. Everyone complains about it lacking raw. In my opinion, I miss the raw for the noise cancelling ability. I'm happy with it for its size. But if that doesn't matter, the fuji finepix s9000 is a lot of camera for the money.

protip; manual setting on compact cameras doesnt exsist. Semi-manual at best.
Get SLR anything else is crap. Yes, that would include the powershots. Talk about throwing your money out of the window.

Sounds like you need to learn a little more about photography before you buy anything. The SD400 is not a terrible camera, you just don't know how to use it. Getting a different camera isn't going to magically make your photos awesome. Although once you learn a little more you probably will want a better camera.

Buy a book on photography (or go to the library and read it, free = awesome) and start learning. I recommend Understanding Exposure because it's very easy to read, and has lots of big photos in it for examples.

If you don't know how to take good photos with a point and shoot, chances are, you'll just get the same results with an slr. Like what has been said before, know your camera and try to work around its limitations.

protip: Some of the best photos in the world were taken with point-and-shoots and cameras much more shittier than yours.

I like how people get all elitist when it comes to SLR cameras. Yes, they do give you more freedom with how your exposure comes out, but that doesn't mean pictures from non-SLRs are automatically crap. It also doesn't mean all pictures from SLRs are automatically amazing.
