I'm being given a decent lense and camera kit from a photog mate of mine. What sort of film camera should I choose from? By the way I can choose between Canon Eos 1n or a Nikon F4.

Do you have the option of carrying each of 'em around for a day so you can see which one feels better? If so, try that and decide for yourself. Most likely, asking that question here is just going to end up with Canon fanboys saying go with the Canon and Nikon fanboys saying go with the Nikon. The important factor is which one you feel more comfortable with.

hmm, i actually think the Canon will be a little more comfortable than the F4.
the F4 is a battle axe, will last you for ever, but its also built one too, maybe not the most comfortable camera in the world.

as of film, what you want? colour? B&W? E6? EIR? what??

I shoot mostly Velvia, BW and E6 films. Both are equally comfortable to hold and have equally great lenses. So many decisions!

My dad has an f4 and an f5. The f4 takes beautiful, beautiful photos. Dad used it for years, it worked out great. Just beware; it's big. Very big, heavy and bulky. If you don't mind a little bit of a workout, or have strong hands, then i'd recommend going for the Nikon.

Also: I use velvia film too. I love it to death and will never go anywhere without some rolls in reach.

My F4 is one of my favorite cameras. I love the ergonomics on it (thought it is a little heavy), the metering is fantastic, and it absolutely sets the bar for durability and reliability.

I'm looking at upgrading my camera currently (to film, of course) I'm considering an f4 or f5, but i'm still debating. Don't want to carry the bulk.

I've heard the F4 with MB-23 weighs 1.4KG, my F5 1.2KG (without batteries)

Add another vote for the F4, fantastic cameras.
