So /p/, my Grandfather just gave me his old Nikon F2 with a 55mm lens to start toying around with after I mentioned that I'd like to take up photography as a hobby. Problem is, I’ve never used an SLR before, especially not a film one (in fact, I’ve only really had experience with disposables and standard film cameras). The camera body is in really good shape, and all of the levers and meters work properly, even the self-timer on the front. Only downside I can see is that the viewfinder has a bit of dust behind it and the lens seems to as well.

Question is, is this a decent camera to start off with? I did manage to unearth a .pdf of the manual, and I’ve been following it pretty closely. Any suggestions?

Also, my Grandfather is also going to be passing me his Hasselblad (not sure of the model number, but I know it’s a medium format camera) as soon as he unearths it from his storeroom.

you lucky son of a bitch
I wish my grandpa had really badass equipment to give me. And yes, basically if you ever want to really learn about photography this is the best start you could possibly have.

The Nikon is a great camera to learn on. The Hasselblad is epic win.
>> Anonymous
you could start by learning to focus your p&s correctly, lol

The Nikon F2 is very probably the best 35mm SLR ever made.

The Hasselblad will give you great image quality, with the large negative and Zeiss lenses.

In other words, the only way you could've gotten luckier in this was if he threw in a Leica M3 and a 50 Summilux and a view camera.

I want to stab you in the heart, steal your identity, and thereby gain your cameras.

The F2 still hasn't been surpassed in so many ways. Arguably, it's got the best build quality of any Nikon, and if that's the AS prism you've got there, you also have Nikon's most sensitive lightmeter ever.

The Hasselblad is a piece of shit camera and I'd be happy to take it off your hands. I'll even pay for the shipping.

No it's a piece of shit, seriously. If any of you guys have Hasselblads I'll take yours as well (A Leica is fine too)

you sir, win. Grab some 400asa and learn the basics of shutter speed, aperture, and DOF. Not to mention the relationships between them. all in all just enjoy the cameras cause you got some preally nice ones for free.

Forget it. Film is dead. Just send those old clunker cameras to me and I'll take care of them. Especially the Hasselblad.

OP here. Thanks for the encouragement. I did a little research through Wikipedia about the F2 before posting, and the consensus was that it is a great camera. Glad to hear that actual photographers feel this way as well.
Also, I'm still on the fence about keeping the Hasselblad. I mean, I know it's practically an heirloom, but I knew beforehand how much they usually sell for... and if the condition the F2 is in is representative of what the Hasselblad will be in, it could potentially fetch a few thousand dollars (if eBay is to be believed).

Any thoughts?

Don't do it, it's like cheating on your grandfather. Either let him keep it, or give it to someone else if you're not going to use it.

Keep this in mind: prices on used 'Blads are TANKING. As in dropping like a fucking stone in a vacuum. Keep it, use it, love it. You won't get what it's worth selling it, and you won't ever have your grandfather's camera again if you sell it. Complete Hasselblad setups, unless they're MINT are going for $500 and less.

To review: KEEP IT, USE IT, LOVE IT.

If you don't, I will personally smack you in the junk with a lacrosse ball.

Keep the Hasselblad.

OP here again. Don't get me wrong, I really do WANT to keep it, but being fresh out of college and inbetween jobs (see also: unemployed) doesn't allow for many luxuries. A couple thousand dollars would alleviate my financial woes, but I suppose you guys are right in saying that selling it would be doing a major disservice.

Seriously, you won't get much for it. 'Blad film gear isn't worth shit any more compared to what it used to be. I know it's hard to keep equipment around when you're broke (as a photo major now working freelance in assisting, I KNOW), but you'll thank yourself a few years down the road when you still have it.

NO! Sell that puppy! Break your granddads heart and later on you can kick yourself for being an idiot and then blame it on your current state of economy. Ah to be young and stupid again...

2) love them both
3) keep the 'Blad
4) ???
