Hello /p/. I'm thinking of getting a Holga for a friend of mine. What's your recommendation for a good model? She's in UK, Loughborough area, and if she can get supplies around that area, film etc, the better. Or should I just get her a crazy old polaroid or something? FYI, I'll be making my purchase on ebay.co.uk.

Find a model thats in good shape and not much more then 20 bucks. Cause you will need all your money on buying/developing 120 film. Holgas are such a fun camera, your friend should enjoy it.

Any specific models that I should look out for?

I'd rather have an old polaroid land camera. Pretty much any of those would have a better lens and you can do lolart emulsion transfers pretty easily.

Why don't you get her a real camera instead? Semi-decent mechanical SLRs are not unheard of in the 25-50 USD range. And they're infinitely superior to those abominations.

I'd feel seriously insulted if anyone got me a Holga. But maybe that's just me.

She's hot, that's why I'm getting into all this trouble.

Ok, I'm getting her a Canon AE1. Are the /p/ gods happy with my decision?

Hmm.. so she's hot.. so whatever camera you get her she will take pics of her and her new boyfriend and send it to you....sigh

Depends on how serious she is about photography, but good enough for a start. If she likes it, she can move on to a manual body.
>> bias lol! des
in before someone claiming the AE1 is an effective manual body.
>> graedus
i still use a canon AE1 and it works without any problem. 'Tho the flash can be a pain, since it is pretty much the size of the body itself.
Hey des, what problems do you have with the AE1?

nothing big really, I'm just not a fan. The action grip is great, with a 50mm on it, it's got a great feel to it.
The viewfinder and metering visualization is pits. I've had two and they both had problems with their shutters(squeeks and then, on one, failure) and the shutter speed dial(intermittant operation).

It's not a horrible camera, I gave my working one to my mother. I just feel that it works against you and tries very hard to just be a point and shoot with interchangeable lenses. Maybe that's what's made them a cult-classic. The AE is fairly good and they're cheap as chips at this point.

Though, IMO, if you want to go FD-mount, you're much better served with an A-1 or F-1.
