So, I got my K20d last weekend, and it feels pretty strange coming over from a film SLR. Thought I'd share a variety photos from the past week - C&C is as always welcome.
Lens is DA* 16-50/2.8.

I find myself putting it in one color mode and leaving it like that for a while, to emulate a film stock. Monochrome with a mock IR filter and a slight cyan cast feels almost like Neopan 100.

Highlight range isn't brilliant, but it works well enough for some remote flash stuff - one to provide backlighting, and another bounced off a white wall to light the opaque parts of the flower.

While the K20d's viewfinder is certainly good, it pales in comparison to full-frame. I find it an issue with me that I sometimes fail to think about composition, since I'm not shooting on expensive film.

Depth of field is generally greater than I would like, even at f/2.8. Part of me regrets not getting a Bessa R3A and a 35/1.2. .

The imperfect look from old film lenses and film is gone. I know this is a bit of a niggle, but it feels to me that some character is lost. But it does make the digital workflow a lot smoother.

One more thing-this camera is huge, over three pounds with the DA* lens. Of course this is compounded by the fact that I'm not exactly buff.
I guess that's the price paid for the convenience of digital, but I will be hanging on to my old OM-2 because I'm so much of a filmfaggot.

One place where this camera shines is in action photography.
Inb4 shitty autofocus, only 3 FPS, etc etc, all of which is true. That said it's just a lot easier than film.
I also miss the fact that people don't run up to you, asking to look at the picture, and tell me to delete it, screaming that they look fat.

Last one. Also gone is the anticipation of waiting to get a roll of film back from the developer. That's good or bad depending on how you look at it.
If I don't end up returning it in favor of a rangefinder, my next lens will probably be a 58/1.4 MF Voigtlander SCII for restore a little bit of the MF film feel.

STOP COMPARING IT TO FUCKING FILM

holy fuck, you're a faggot
>> Anonymous
>>220108
FOD-chan? Is that you?
>> Anonymous
Learn to fucking post-process. This is digital, film is film. If you want to emulate the feeling of using a certain film stock, get a preset for some program and batchprocess without looking at the original pictures.
>> Anonymous
I'll crit later.

>>220110
You can learn to shoop that imperfect look in, and you can use plenty of old-style K and M42 mount lenses on the K20D. I don't process my photos to look "like film," but I do move them more in that sort of imperfect direction you're talking about.

>>220121
Why? It's what he shot with, he's trying to decide what he thinks of the new camera and sensor type, so he's comparing it to what he's used to.
>> Anonymous
You might be forgetting that what digital strives to achieve is the greatest raw image quality possible in true color. That is why it's not going to have the soft, dreamy look of film, or the look of any film stock. Companies are going for a specific effect: realism.

While different film emulsions produced different results which you might prefer better than true to life colors, you have to understand that digital doesn't.

You have one sensor, and it tries to produce colors as realistic as possible. It's up to you to bend its look to how you like it.
>> Kavbar !bhcZKibP7.
>>220130
Absolutely true. I remember Cosina-voigtlander made a prototype "universal" lens that was purposefully soft wide open and only single coated a while back, pretty cool.
I suppose this gives me a chance to brush up on my GIMP knowledge. Quite frankly, my girlfriend is a lot better at photoshop than I am.

>>220130
Which makes sense, since one can bend it every-which-way from the best possible source.

Dead thread is dead.
So, what say you? Yes? No?
She suggested the pp; lots of subtracted/multiplied color layers, plus a contrast stretch.

Newb here.

Can anyone recommend a tutorial/how to, when it comes to PP like this ?

>She suggested the pp; lots of subtracted/multiplied color layers, plus a contrast stretch.

Don't really know what multiplied color layers mean, but I guess I'll learn after a tutorial or two.

Anyone?

the thread is dead because your pictures fucking suck, and it's embarassing as a fellow pentax user to see the camera so horribly misrepresented by your childish and inept photography

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all summer.

If you have Photoshop or GIMP, this is easy.

1. Open your base image and create 3 new blank layers (bring up the dialogue with ctrl+L).

2. Make one layer yellow, one pink, and one blue using the fill tool (you can experiment with other colors, but this is a good starting point).

3. Set the yellow layer's "mode" to "multiply" (it's in the layers dialogue, can't miss it). Set the pink and the blue to "screen" or "difference" (or whatever you like, basically, these are the only two I've tried so far).
4. Lower the opacity of the layers you just made to around 15%, or whatever works for you, keep playing with that until you get the colors you want. Then when you're confident with that, you can Image > Flatten, and adjust your curves, contrast, saturation, etc.

This gives you a bit of a faggy deviant-art look if you try too hard, so try to keep the contrast up.

>>221227
or you could just, you know, adjust the levels and color balance without creating a ton of retarded layers

whatevz!
>> Kavbar !bhcZKibP7.
>>221231
Apples to oranges, this method selectively masks particular colors, creating a less contrasty, slightly tinted image.

CV's current lineup is comprised of highly corrected modern lenses that aren't that different from say, Pentax's primes. Even though they have two singlecoated RF lenses (Nokton 35/1.4 and 40/1.4), they'd still be too "modern" for your taste I'm guessing.

Get some old K and M42 mount glass.

I thought it was multicoated?
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.

Both those lenses have multi and single coated versions. The 40 one may have been a limited edition - I'm not sure.
