Thanks. I have a some better ones, I think. I'm wading through all the shots right now.

Actually, it's the subject that makes 'em. These fuckers were amazing. And it was awesome being so close to getting hit all the time.

C&C welcome. I may go back later this week and shoot some more.

This one is the best
And good job :) Flash as fill worked really well, The D50 +(D70) because of that are awesome for sports camera's. Especially if you sync the flash manually as fast as you need :) (1/1000s+ of a second flash sync for the win)

These with the 18-70?
>> Anonymous
>>138000

I'm not sure that the D50 supports FP flash sync mode.
>> sv !!vC9KZM3Ch/H
>>138000

Kit lens, actually, 18-55mm. I used on-board for fill except for>>137940which was like 3 remote flashes (was also the lemon Sigma on that shot).
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
sv, these are fucking BALLER. WELL DONE, SIR.

Everyone, check these pictures out. These are instances of ACTUALLY GOOD skateboarding pics, not the shit we're usually accosted with. Very, very nice.

Skateboarding? 3/4 are bikes.

Just kidding. I like these, though. Great work on all of them. Although, if I had to pick 137940 is the weakest since you can't really see the rider's face at all.

bravo my friend
>> sv !!vC9KZM3Ch/H
Shit. Thanks everyone.

>>138008

I agree. That was probably my third or fourth shot of the day, though. I learned a lot since that shot.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>138001
not FP sync, even better, Tape down the rear 2 pins on the SB-600 or Sb-800, and you can fire the flash manually as fast as your shutter can click (Electronic shutter FTW) (D50 = 1/4000)
You lose a bit of light, however it performs slightly better than FP mode because of the nature of FP's multiple firing power issues.
>> Anonymous
Fuck, all of these are awesome. 3rd is weakest though - subject just doesn't really pop from the background as much as the others.

woo, I like that shot too. Sun is almost in the perfect position too.

The Bikes are 100x more interesting to take pics of than the skateboarders. I see you recognized that aswell!

ahhh, thanks for that, wiki wasn't loading for me last night...no idea why...

gotta try this fill-flash thing...

also, can the onboard flash work for fill-flashing?
>> sv !!vC9KZM3Ch/H
>>138673

It's what I used for 90% of my shots yesterday.
>> chris
use fill flash with a diffuser so you don't get shitty and harsh flash lines...

Try the Omnibounce or flipit Jr. for your bounce flash, its a great piece to have with you.

Hmm, looks like I'm going to be the sole hater here.

Does anyone care enough to explain what I'm just not seeing? Every shot just looks so pedestrian.

Bikes really are more fun to shoot, though a good skateboarder can make for great shots.

It's fine to hate. Can you be more specific? Have you seen other similar shots that you've liked? I am looking for C&C as I plan to go out several more times.

I'm not hating but they just look normal to me.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with them but I'm just not going head over heels like:

If anything, these ARE exactly like the skate park pictures you see all over.

Really, I don't want to be just 'that' guy you know. But I'm not seeing anything spectacular.

kickass

i don't really agree with
>>138780
maybe you haven't been on /p/ long enough, but i've seen many threads of skatepark posts. they all pale in comparison to sv's stuff.
sure, actual pro skate photography is probably OH WOW AWESOME. but none of it's ever been posted by a photographer here.
which is why..
>These are instances of ACTUALLY GOOD skateboarding pics, not the shit we're usually accosted with.
still stands.
>> Anonymous
i sort of agree with>>138780

All are technically decent, sharp and movement is deliciously frozen.

I would prefer a little more "pop" to bring out the riders. Almost everyone against sky could use stronger fill.

The last one is almost scenic, airy and peaceful but could have put the horizon straight and bring the rider out more. Slightly awkward "pose" too.

That's my Cc. Not hatin', just sayin.

These are not bad, just not perfect.

>>138811

I'm quite sure I've been here longer than you have, Photoshop master.

From the first posts you've made without being a tripfag, to the TRUE HDR fuckfest you had with Jeremo.

Every step of the way of your Photoshop faggotry.

They all just look like random snapshots, well taken snapshots, sure.

But there's really nothing "amazing" as some of you say.

Or possibly you're a newfag, this is your first day here, and you just heard about those things second-hand. No way to distinguish the two possibilities.

If that makes you feel any better.

There's really no reason for me to bring up something like that. But you do have a tendency to come to beethy's rescue over and over.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
We actually get quite a bit of skateboarding / bmx wildart at the Texan, and this is better than much of it.

Don't let this turn into a shitstorm. Just critique the photos and be done with it. I'll tell you why I like them:

He's feeling the frame, we get faces (except for 137940, which I'm not a huge fan of), the fill flash is pretty good, the colors are rich, over-saturated, and everything's in tight focus with no motion blur. And guess what? He did it with shitty kit. A D50, on-camera flash (right?) and the kit 18-55 lens (which is a plastic monstrousity, but looks pretty good at around f/8, which is exactly where he is.) sv deserves mad props for this.

The biggest thing you can learn from these shots: get close. Now get closer. Now get so close that you think you're going to be hit. Good, you're where you need to be.
>> Anonymous
why didnt you shoot skateboarders at a skatepark?
wasted good photo skill on bmxfags

I find that you can get good shots from mediocre BMXers, but you need a really talented skateboarder to get shots with visual impact.

>>138837

I'll give the more fill a try next time. I'm very limited in my equipment, however (kind of want to buy a crapload of Vivitar 285s and remote triggers now, though).

>>138876

Saying they are snap shotish is almost (almost) a compliment to me. That indicates casualness when I certainly wasn't. I was constantly throwing myself out of the way, dodging skateboards, and falling (hard) on my knees and elbow to prevent from getting hit or to get a shot. My friend actually got ran over once and his camera took a hit from a board. I'm glad it looks so... effortless. ;)

Anyway, this was my first time to shoot this kind of stuff. Thanks for the C&C.
