Fashion Shows? Anonymous
Sup /p/
I'm going to shoot a fashion show in a couple days and I was wondering if you guys had any photography/other advice that you could give to a noob to this kind of photography.

1) stand at the end of the runway
2) use a ULTRA wide angle like, oh canon ef-s 10-22 at 10mm
3) get the strongest on camera flash available, like 580 EX
4) use it front on for MASSIVE effect
5) post on 4chan
6) ???
7) profits

Ignore this. He's trolling another poster.

I've never shot a fashion show, but I would think you'd want long, fast medium teles (like an 85/1.8 on a crop) and/or a fast tele zoom (like a 70-200/2.8).

I do know you do want to find out what the lighting and set-up of the place is beforehand. That goes for shooting any event, especially indoors or artificially lit ones.

Is it a runway show similar to the photo shown?

Is there going to be a photog's pit?

Do you know how long the length of the catwalk is?

Flash is usually unnecessary unless you want fill as lighting for a show is fuckin important as heck since you need to showcase the clothing. So ask the organisers whether they don't mind having a flash, most won't and models love the fuckin attention of flash flash bang bang, since they don't eat it's their only means of nourishment.

Make sure the ISO and aperture (but not enough so as to get too shallow a dof) are at a point where you're able to get about 1/150 or 1/250 comfortably. Motion blur on catwalk shots suck dick.

It is a well-known fact that runway models photosynthesise to produce nourishment. That is why they so rarely eat anything and the camera flash is so important to them.

That's what tripfags do around /p/.

They jerk each other off like faggots.

Rehashing jokes that have already been done before makes a change from rehashing art that has already been done before.

Join in. It's nice to have someone else jerk you off rather than do it yourself all the time.

Disturbing.

Also, be prepared to be shat on by ALL THE OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS, they wont give a crap about you and be quite happy to push you out the way.

OP here:
>>162567
I'm pretty certain I'm going to be either the only or one of the very few photogs there, so I'm not too worried about this.
>>162515
Similarity? Not a clue, it was just a picture I pulled from google.
Pit? Again, completely unsure, but it seems unlikely as it will be a converted college auditorium.

Lighting: I'm pretty much screwed for getting lighting beforehand.
Gear: I'll be shooting on a crop 70-200 f/4.

Thanks for the tips, I'm pretty sure I have the technical aspects down as much as I can without actually having seen the place yet. But what about stylistically/compositionally? I was wondering if there were any specific dos/don'ts for fashion shooting.

pro tip: both feet on the ground, mid step = fail

You can't ask the organizers?

Also, see if you can't get your hands on something faster. F/4 for indoors is awfully slow.

As for composition, I wouldn't worry about it so much unless someone is paying you to get a certain type of shots. That's not saying "fuck composition," it's saying not to worry about it, i.e. just shoot it however you think says what you want to say about the whole affair. I don't think going by situational rules of composition or going for certain external styles often produces good photographs. Just shoot it how you would shoot it, in your own style.

assuming this isn't some artsy: let's not use projectors show

4.0 is fine if you use 800 or 1600 and the models are lighted

Never cut body parts off either. It looks fucking strange.

pro tip #2: with a 70-200, you can manage full body shot at midpoint and half body shot at end of runway

massive win

Honestly, you're fucked without a flash unless you get really lucky with the show lighting and it's not some flashing colored mess. Is there no way you can get one?

OP again:

Oh no, I have a 430 ex, I'm just screwed for seeing how it's all going to be set up and lit beforehand.

All I remember from the last time I went to a fashion show... SO MANY CAMERAS... ALL BETTER THAN MINE!!!

I fucking cried myself to sleep that night.
