Old Canon Gs are awesome, better than the G9 by miles.

The G2 is one of the most well-designed cameras I've shot with, especially for waist-level shooting. I wish I still had one; I've been thinking of buying another off eBay since they go for only $50.

Oh, the guy deleted his post. OP, that Nikon should work pretty much like the G series the guy thought it was. But do take a look at the G2, it really is awesome.

yeah, i didn't read the post at all and was wondering what kind of point and shoot had a hotshoe and i thought it was an old canon G

Back then the camera companies tended to take their high-end point and shoots more seriously, whereas now they tend to make them as gadgets for the average gadget freak who will pay extra just to have THE BEST but won't carry an SLR.

F/2 was typical for a top-end model of the time, and lots of models had larger sensors than we would see in a point and shoot today: a 2/3" sensor, half the size of a Four-Thirds (4/3" made suitable for printing in ads) sensor. The G2 has a 1/1.8" sensor, smaller, and typical even for today, but it gave good output. F/2.8 is typical max aperture now.

What, lol megapixels? Four is enough for most things, and I'd bet the G2 has about the same amount of noise and DR as the G9.

I'd post examples, but I don't have any I can get to ATM.

Also ergonomics are more important than image quality, any day. I handled a G9 in a store and there's no way I would want to shoot with that.

> most things

In before big print freaks, I mean on-screen and 4x6s, 5x7s, etc.

Not megapixels, but actual image quality. Look at some examples around the web. The G2 looks like my A520. 4.0 megapixels is more than enough (in fact, I turn my camera down to 1600x1200 because it provides the same detail).
