Long time lurker, first time poster here. I've always been interested in photo just that I've had a rather tight budget. Now I've got some spare money and was thinking of getting a DSLRas a late christmas present for myself.

Since I'm pretty much a newbie I've been looking into the Nikon D40/X, Canon 400D and the Olympus E-410.

What would /p/ suggest? Keep in mind it'll be my first camera too!

OP here, thought I'd add that I've tried both the Nikon and the Canon, but I couldn't really try different things considering I was in a shop. The Nikon felt sturdier though.

Standard responses are:
1) they're both the same, so buy whichever felt better to you.
2) Nikon sucks ass for making a DSLR that couldn't even use the auto focus in most of their lenses. Who cares if it's a few dollars cheaper if it's neutered. (PS they just lowered the Rebel XT's price, it's like 450 with kit lens at amazon now).
3) Canon and Nikon's lenses are on par up until the high end L-series from Canon. If you're never going to buy an L, it doesn't matter which one you go with. But don't think you won't ever buy an L. They're amazing.
etc.

Laaaaaaaaaaaa.

Anyway, on the D40 vs. D40X issue I would go with the former.

Between Canon 400D and Nikon D40, I would (and have) gone with the 400D, since the ability to change settings with buttons is a huge advantage for me at least (compared with D40's menus). That said, I'm own a 400D.

get the 410, it has pretty decent kit lenses, and its the lightest and most compact of the three choices, which means you'll be able to take it out more, and take more pictures. Oh, and its cheaper, so you'll be able to buy a better second or third lens with the money you save.

I call bullshit on this. If you were really a long time lurker, you would have seen this question and the responses thereto hundreds of times by now. FOR EXAMPLE:

It is the most common fucking question that /p/ gets asked. Lurk the fuck more. Or at least don't lie about it.

Nikon 14-24 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 VR f/2.8... I could go on for aaaages.

Lens choice (and quality) is pretty even with the big 2, Canon makes more exotic lenses. Nikon have the upper hand when it comes to consumer level glass.

As for the bodies, Canon are better for entry-level dSLRs mainly 'cos of compatibility with most lenses. D40/X will only autofocus with lenses that have a built in motor, AF-S(Nikon) and HSM (Sigma) are example abbreviations of what to look for when shopping for lenses for the D40/X.

Nikons handle better than Canons though, IMO. However the D40 has some settings in-menu while the 400D has them as buttons.

Canon does not make a 14-24mm 2.8

I'm going to disagree with Canons are better for beginners. Because Entry level cameras are GOOD regardless of manufacturer. It's as simple as that.

Once you get mid range and pro... that's where the separations become clear.

>>103868

There's the 16-35 but they both have lenses the other doesn't.

"Nikon have the upper hand when it comes to consumer level glass."

How can you say that? Canon has a much broader range of consumer lenses and each and everyone of them will focus regardless of if it's an entry level camera or the top dog.

Getting a D70 or D80 sets you back a bit more than a 400D. Sure, you'll say get a used D50 but then I'll get a used 30D.

That's not the point, you're still wrong on Canon making a 14-24mm 2.8

What? When did i say that?

>>Canon has a much broader range of consumer lenses and each and everyone of them will focus regardless of if it's an entry level camera or the top dog.

ummm... yeah okay mate. Go ahead and put that EF-S 18-55 on your 5D or 1Ds...
>> else !L6xabslN96
whats the big deal?

i got the nikon d40 cuz its cheaper and it looks cool. and its not like im gonna buy a whole range of lenses to _start_ trying out photography. im doing just fine with the standard 18-55m kit lens and by the time im ready to move on to better lenses nikon will have made more, cheaper AF-S or i will have enough money for the current range.

seriously, any1 starting out photography who buys the whole range of equipment is probably a richfag who will get bored of it any move on to some other hobby like gambling anyways. this applies for any field of interest im sure..

You'd have to be a retard to put an EF-S on a full frame camera, unless you're looking to replace your shutter after you destroy it.

All I can add is that you should probably go with what most of your friends use, all else being equal. It's nice to be able to borrow lenses and such.
But yeah, can't really go wrong either way.
