This is what I have now. I hate it. I need something better if I'm ever going to get into photography. Suggestions?

canon powershot : compact with very good image quality + some control

entry level dslr + nice glass : more control and ways to fuck up your pics

A compact with controls to adjust the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO offers the same amount of control a DSLR with controls to adjust the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

The Nikon E2N appears to be a perfect step up for you.

Alternatively, a more advanced and professional model of the camera you already own, which will surely benefit you with familiar controls, menus, and software.

You can still snag the FinePix F20 for a reasonable price. The F20 will trounce any Canon Powershot in the low light imaging department especially in anything above ISO 400.

I have a F31fd and at ISO 800 there is no P&S camera that can touch it.

oh man, i used to have one of those!
it shot one raw photo, plus the jpg, plus the index, per high density disk.
it was great for copying disks too, coz it had 1.5 meg cache and a sector by sector copy.

i cant beleive it was 10 years ago people were asking where the film goes.

thx OP troll. memories.

oh snap i found some of the pix it took!

agreed. Canon S5 is cheap at the mo

I use it and a D80 with 18-200 Nikkor and the S5 still has a wider range and a fraction of the weight
