D40 takes pictures as DSC_0001, 0002, 0003 etc.
When I clear the memory card, it starts from 0001 again. How do I make it so that, when uploading photos to my computer, I do not have to keep renaming photos, or creating new folders?
tl;dr, how do I make photos of the same filename not overwrite eachother when putting on computer.

I'd say if you're keeping every single one of your photos in the same directory, you are Doing It Wrong.

That being said, I'm reasonably sure the D40 has a setting that'll make it number continuously rather than restarting every time you reformat or swap cards. That'll still only get you to DSC_9999 before you're back at the same problem, but it'll let you do it wrong for longer.

Suggestions, then?
Where should I put all my photos, if not in the same folder? Should I have photodump folders for certain dates, or something? :( Help please.

At the very least, picture project will save each new upload from your memory card in its own folder. I'm pretty sure that's the default. At which point the files don't overwrite each other.

I use one folder for each day named like 2008-10-14.naked-chick-main-st (I.e., ISO8601 date plus a brief description of what I took pictures of), and I'm starting to outgrow that after the three years I've been using it (especially after this year, in which I've been taking at least one shot every single day). If you're comfortable putting all of your shots in one directory, you're not taking enough pictures.

Well I like to let PS Lightroom handle my files - they most certainly are in one and the same directory. Still, I use groupings n stuff, so I dont just have a really huge pile of pics to search through everytime I need a specific one.
Btw, they are named "year-month-day-number", e.g. 2008-10-14-00001 and so on ... They don't overwrite that way.

File No. Sequence

not trolling or anything but ken's guide is pretty useful from time to time

Thanks for the useful and not judgmental advice :3

I go with the date + summary too. Since I don't have an event or a shooting session everyday, I also have like week-snapshots folders.

I have 2893 files in my "EOS 30D" folder and about 3200 files in my "EOS 5D" folder.

Correction: 3600 in the 5D folder.

Seriously, you don't suck. Don't let that 5D languish, man.

The uploading software that comes with my 350D automatically uploads mine into folders by date..very convenient. Sometimes i put a brief description.

i have 2 4GB cards, good for 400 RAW each or so

the other day i was doing a shoot and i was at about IMG_9800, knowing i would roll past 9999 and get reset to 0001 mid shoot. but since i'm so anal, i didn't manually reset it because it was a good indicator of my shutter actuations. so now i'm stuck with 0001 through 0400 and then it jumpts to 9800 ;____;

just a rant lol

When that happens to me, I renumber that day's shots with an extra digit after I get 'em off the card. img_9xxx becomes img_09xxx, img_0xxx becomes img_10xxx. Just to keep them in the right order in the directory. Next day goes back to normal.

Oh, I also name each file as
2007-08-16 02.04.06
That's year-month-day hour-minute-second. Easier to keep in order. Especially if I shoot the same session with two or more cameras.

I upload each picture to 4chan and save them again and use that filename they get.
