First time out w/ the XTI Rebel in my film class. First assignment is taking a picture of someone doing something... (vague i know)

Please let me know what I could do to improve as a photographer. Also comment how you think I could improve in color correction.

Also... I dunno why the EXIF data was stripped. I'm on an old PC right now because my MBP is in for service and had to use a shitty ReaConverter Pro to convert from RAW.

Again, thanks in advance

and for this photo it would've benefited from a larger DOF to put the child in focus in as well.

The best way to get better is to expose yourself to lots of good photography while thinking critically what about it is while going out and taking lots of photos yourself. That being said, don't be afraid of reading up formal composition in art, not just photography.

Well, the first obvious thing that comes to mind is to crop the distracting people out of the background. Doing so also helps to give the same amount of space on either side of the subject. Lower the ceiling of the picture so that doesn't distract either. And like the person above me said, I would have gotten further away from the subject and zoom in the give a better (more shallow) DOF to the picture.

View left for a start.
