medium format anyone?
>> Warren !WSxruxpIJs
Where is Jeremo, anyway? I'd like to hear what his reasons are. It could be a perfectly sound decision on his part, but it could also not be. I'm curious.

While I again agree that digital is great, let's not go overboard with the assumed superiority over film.

Dammit....this is just going back to the same argument. Hahahaha this is just stupid.

1. Jeremo didn't ask anything about image quality either. In fact, he didn't ask for your or anyone else's opinion on the matter. He just stated a fact.

2. How about some reasons: Medium format cameras are fun to use, they don't need batteries, they are less expensive than they've ever been- within reach of many people who have wanted one for a long time, most of them are extremely well built and will outlive most photographers, there are tons of different kinds of MF cameras with lots of specialty features, they're more convenient to use than large format, the use medium format film which is also fun, most of them are very simple yet capable and highly customizable, and how about the number one reason: because he wants to.

It's kind of like comparing a new Honda Accord to a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 500K. The Honda is in pretty much every way a "better" car- more powerful, faster, more comfortable, more reliable, tons of high-tech toys; but ultimately it lacks the style, precision, and outright fun to drive that make the 500K one of the greatest cars of all time.

1. So what? This is a discussion forum, people state things all the time and they get... here it comes... discussed.

2. >because he wants to.

That's not a reason by itself to do anything; the other ones advanced hold some merit, and I wasn't saying "don't buy a Hasselblad" so much as I was saying "reconsider dumping what is probably overall a better system to do unless you have good reasons, and if you do dump it, why not go all-out for a view camera?" My thoughts on the matter. Jeremo is not obligated or bound by anything to pay any attention to an anonymous poster on a message board. Besides that aspect, he's a good photographer who could probably turn out some great photographs with a disposable camera.

And the whole analogy with cars just reenforces my point: a car like a Mercedes would be fun to drive, but it'd to buy it as a primary driving car. Photography is somewhat different, because there's the whole artistic aspect to it and someone might want something film offers that digital doesn't, or might jive especially well with the handling on a particular camera, or whatever. That's fine; I'm currently trying to talk myself into buying an old Leica for precisely some of those reasons. But I'd never dump my digital system for it; different tools for different situations, for starters.

Rot, typos popped in during editing.

"system to do so"

and

"it'd be stupid to buy"

is how two parts of that post should read.

That is true though, i wasn't make a qualitative comment in regards to medium format, rather saything that it's not as expensive as people make it out to be. Neither is large format for that matter. Digital backs are obviously another story.

I do plan on having a dedicated LF system for landscapes and my attempts at 'fine art'. But right now the most versatile system i have is my Nikon APS-C which is great as it does EVERYTHING i need. Not one thing perfectly, but all things fantastically.

The long term plan would be to have a nikon FX camera, or a Canon 35mm equiv system i like. + MF or LF or Both.
