You guys are recommending P&S cameras for someone to see if they are into PHOTOGRAPHY? Come on.

Spend a maximum of 50 bucks on an old Canon 35mm manual camera. Or an old Olympus OM-10 or OM-1.
>> eagle
i say a F3 and a couple lenses. the 105mm and a 50mm
should be under budget, get the 35mm 1.8 if you have spare monies

as good as an F3 is I would never recommend it to a beginner

its not hard to use

no one said it was hard to use genius
there are several problems
1) the ones that are cheap are beat up
2) the shit is heavy - someone asking about a point and shoot expects cameras to weigh about 3 ounces
3) manual - 10 or more years ago it was understood that while you were learning that you would miss shots and that you would mess up. Prevailing attitude now is that camera should do everything except wipe your ass
4) The number of places that do QUALITY film processing are dwindling. I live in NYC and there are only two place left where I would bring film.
5) Nikkor manual focus lenses (desirable ones at least) are getting harder and harder to get on the used market. Using new AF lenses is a sucky solution.

how are you supposed to learn if a camera holds your hand and such?
easily sourced at KEH

>>247336
don't ask me how people are supposed to learn - I figure they never do learn based on all the shit posted on flickr and other dumps. Also the decline of quality in print ads & magazine working. Mostly, by the fact that jackass hipsters use a Holga & E6 and then get it cross-processed and call it "art"

KEH's prices for clean, desirable mf Nikkor's ain't cheap. I just looked - AGAIN - they want $290 for a 20mm 3.5. I paid less than that in NY
24 mm F/2 $500-$600
a beat 35 mm 1.4 is over $300
each of these is more than OP's ENTIRE BUDGET

i see canon FD mount 50/f-1.4's go for $40 at least once a week on ebay

Olympus OM-2. OM lenses are generally very good and cheap, the 50mm 1.4 is great bang for your buck.

Also, dikbut.

which two?

If you're going Canon FD (I can't suggest it), ffs, don't get the AE-1. It's a horrible camera. Get the A-1, if not the F-1.
>F3
eh. There are only a few reasons to own an F3 at this point and none of them make sense to someone learning. An F4 is a much better choice but probably outside your price range unless you get lucky. I'd suggest an N8008s kit from KEH. They're cheap, have a nice and wide LCD "match needle" in the finder and will meter with AI lenses.
In the past I would just say get an FE and be done with it, but the FE/FM bodies have jumped in price of late and parts are getting scarce at this point. It's depressing, but whatever.

I bought a nikon fm and a 50mm pancake for about $80 on ebay. I've had it about 5 months now, and so far I'm very happy with my purchase.

I would suggest the FM, because its manual, affordable, small for a 35mm SLR, and because there are tons of lenses for sale online and off.

Also, if you're trying to learn photography, I'd stay away from any cameras with automatic features. As a beginner you'll just get lazy, and end up using the auto options, instead of manually focusing exposing.

The F4 is not a good option, because on average those cost $250~270, and the F3s are the same.

Pentax Spotmatic and Takumars. Can't go wrong.

Konica-Minolta and Hexanons. Can't go wrong.

>Pentax Spotmatic
Except for the whole mercury battery thing.
Dead or dying shutter springs.
Foam that's turned to glue.
If you go M42, go fujica or Pentax K-mount with an adaptor.
