That 18-55 is really soft, and the chromatic aberration hurts mein eyes... you should really invest in a better lens. The 18-70 wouldn't be a bad choice, nor would the 24-120 VR. Both are fairly sharp and would focus with your D40. A prime would be best, but you've kind of screwed yourself there.

As far as the image goes, it's pretty nice. Would be awesome if the image quality was better. So damn soft. :(
