nikkor 50mm f/1.8D Anonymous
hello /p/
former canonfag here going nikon after seeing great deal on d200 on ebay. (got it for $810!) i'm looking for a fast, reliable prime for general photography and heard alot of good things about the nikkor 50mm f/1.8D. but seeing how cheap it is, is there anything i should be concerned about?

uh, no. its just a simple optical design thats been in production forever and is cheap to make.

50 1.8s (either brand) are among the sharpest lenses you can buy.

All brands (even those faggy 1.7s)

For under $120

op here, i guess what i'm asking is its reliability, i've heard it's sharp, but is the focusing erratic? are there build issues?

whats sharper?

50mm f/1.4
Goes for about $300 though
>> Anonymous
>>199290

the difference is negligible.
>> Anonymous
>>199290
Surprisingly enough, that's not generally true. Most 50mm f/1.4s hold their own when stopped down, but are a little softer wide open when compared to the same company's 1.8 version.

>>199267
Reliability is good, quality control is good. The build quality on the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is not great but not terrible- it's much better than the Canon 50mm f/1.8 but not as good as Nikon's high end lenses.

You can't compare 1.4 to 1.8. But i do know that my 50 1.4 is sharper than my old 1.8 when stopped down to 1.8.

its not.

It's the best lens deal out there. Buy it.

Some of us dont have the "luxury" of 1.7's new anyway...

1.4 or bust!

lol fuck the f/1.4, if i wanted to spend more money i might as well get hasselblad 80/2.8 with adapter. heard its great

The focus isn't SWM, but it's fast because it's a prime. It AF's very accurately, it's razor sharp, it's very fast, and it's cheaper than dirt.

Probably the best $130 camera purchase I've ever made.

Cool, mtf charts. They don't really mean that much in actual practice. Maybe my 1.8 was a lemon, but my 1.4 is definitely a better performer.

FATALITY

If you know of another objective measure of lens resolution and contrast, let's see numbers in that system. Everything I've heard, seen, and experienced says that the 1.8 is sharper than the 1.4 at similar apertures, and kicks its ass at f/4-f/11.
From a theoretical optics standpoint alone, making a 1.4 lens as sharp as a 1.8 is going to be difficult and likely require ED glass, a fluorite element, and/or an aspheric element.

Well my 50 is sharper at 1.4

Those are Canon lenses. We're talking about the Nikkor 50/1.4 and 50/1.8

I've been using the nikkor 50mm f/1.8 for a while now and it's nice and does it's job but it's quite susceptible to fringing. I don't know if that's expected or not.
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
OH, i was talking about the canon lenses the whole time... oops.

dont worry, cause the photozone.de tests show the Nikkor 1.4 is better than the Nikkor 1.8 too.

If a lens is going to cost 3x the price for 2/3's a stop, of course they might as well put some extra effort into manufacturing it.

probably owned a canon powershot. He obviously is a noob if he doesn't even know about the 50 1.8
>> Anonymous
Just bought the f/1.8 yesterday and I love it.
I've used the 1.4 and really I didn't notice that much difference.
of course the DOF was more defined, but I barely noticed the exposure difference

OP here, owned a 30d before, and i HAVE heard of the 50mm/1.8, i just wanted to find out more about it

the 50mm f/1.8 belongs in every dSLR kit..
It's a really sharp lens for ~$100
>> Anonymous
Get it. I thought my 55-18 zoom lense that came with my D70s would hold me over for a good year of learning. A month later I got the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, and promptly decided I hated my stock lense.
I don't remember if the d200 has a full frame sensor or not - Canon's better about that than Nikon as a rule. If it's not full frame, grab a prime 28mm lense, too. On a smaller sensor camera, the 50mm can be kind of limiting for a general lense.

I second this. And suggest the Sigma 30mm 1.4. I played with it for around six hours last night and...well, let's just say I'm buying it. On a crop, a 50mm gives 75/80mm equivalent which for full-body shots indoors is just too long. Depends on the indoors, the 50mm might only be good for headshots.

The 30mm (45 or 48mm equivalent) is excellent indoors.

Another thing to consider is effective light. A 50mm 1.8 lens (hand-held at 1/80) will give more than a stop less light than a 30mm 1.4 lens (hand-held at 1/50).
