Wal-Mart carries a CLP from Targus that's surprisingly good, and only costs $10.

It may not perform as well as a $120 Hoya Supermulticoat, but for a beginner it's quite nice.

oh hey there sage

I'm not sure about this, but maybe you should try the corkin system. I haven't tried them out myself, but you should be able to use any lens with a CPL without buying more.

No, the CLP is from BreakFree, the CPL in from Targus

I've got a hoya one I paid about $60 for that works well. I'd recommend that.

As for the ways of using it:
1. you rotate the front of the filter to change the polarisation. Be aware that if you're on a cheaper zoom lens by zooming in and out you'll rotate the front element.

2. CPLs work best when shooting at 90 degrees to the sun.

3. Buy the largest size you need and use much cheaper step down rings if your lenses have different filter thread sizes.

Hi OP here, did i mention that im looking for the broke mans option here?

Ive found a Hoya 67mm CPL for about 30 quid (60 bucks), do you reckon its gonna be crappy for that?

Anon says get it. pic related its the same filter, except 58mm.

Oh my other tip which I left off from before, you can use it as a ~2 stop ND filter when you want longer shutter speeds. I'd say its a very handy thing to have in your camera bag if you do any outdoor shooting.

what's the difference between a CPL and a GND

i thought GND were used to fix blown out skies and CPL for reflections

I wasn't even bothering with responding to the OP, thats already been done enough and what I would have said has already been said.

I'm just promoting the $10 CPL by Targus from Walmart because that's what is expected of me.

so should the sun be directly to my right/left?

It's /p/'s unanimous decision that the 10 dollar Targus CP at Walmart is the most awesome polarizer evar.

Yes. I said they work best at 90 degrees - i.e. most effective at cutting glare and a stronger effect, but you still get some polarisation at other angles too. Just stick the CPL on, compose the shot at any angle to the sun, then adjust the amount of polarisation.
