hey guys. i do a lot of indoor, low light photography, and i need some faster glass. im looking at a canon ef 50mm f/1.8 to fit my rebel xti. can anyone give me some advice on whether this would be what im looking for or not? i always use adjustable zoom lens' and i did know if the fixed 50mm would be problematic. thanks alot!

No, you need a Hasselblad and that special f/.7 lens Kubrick grabbed from NASA.

(Seriously, though, yes, the 50/1.8 will do for almost anything. You might want to look at the 50/1.4, depending on how low light you're talking.)

>i always use adjustable zoom lens
Yeah, break that habit.

>and i did know if the fixed 50mm would be problematic

It's a medium telephoto on the Rebel's sensor. A nice focal length, but sometimes difficult to use in close quarters.

thanks a lot. this definitely helps me out. i will look into the f/1.4 and see if it is still in my price range. im starting to do a lot of concert photography, so i think the lower the f i can get the better, lighting is usually terrible at those things. and right now im working with a minimum aperture of 3.5 and im barely scraping by. but anyway, thanks for the info! much appreciated!

You might want to consider also getting a wider prime as well - to help with that lovely sensor crop.

Sigma 30mm f/1.4

I bought the Canon 35mm F/2. It ends up being a 56mm lens with the 1.6x magnification. It's fairly fast for indoor shooting and it's a good focal length for crop cameras. Very sharp too.

Fairly cheap for such a quality lens but you really can't beat out the 50mm on price. That thing is almost silly to not have.

QFT.

How close to the stage are you getting? In most venues, something a touch long (like a 50mm, or even longer) is great.

When you're shooting concerts, what focal length do you tend to work at?

Sigmas don't autofocus well with Canons.

is an idea if you want a normal prime. Another one (and the one I'd take, just because I like shorter normals) would be a 28.

well it depends. i go to some local shows where i can get right up in their faces, and i use mainly my sigma 28-80 on 28. but i do some bigger shows (when i can get a photo pass) and i use the same lens with varying distance. lately i've been doing a lot with a fisheye attachment i got. its just a cheapy, but the results arent bad seeing as how i cant afford a high quality fisheye at the moment.
