trying to capture some sports action. girl's softball practice. they got all suspicious and were like 'we don't like paparazzi'. i joked with them a minute. this shot's mid- pitch.

how the hell do you take pictures of people without them getting uncomfortable? i was on top of a 4-floor parking garage for gods sake.

Now now, no reason to stop him. As long as he keeps posting more pictures of girls it's all good. I remember there was this one super stealthy guy at 12chan who was quite good at taking panty shots, maybe slim can turn out like that!

Try asking them next time.

i think 1 sec later and you wouldve gotten a better shot, it looks like shes doing some kind of african dance.

Go down to the field, or find an actual softball game going on (its easier to do this with guys) especially on a college team, theyre used to it. Grab one of your longer lenses, set up a tripod, and go for it. Try talking to the coach or a school authority ahead of time and ask if they'd like any of the photos afterwards. Most of the time the schools love it.

44mm on the S3 is, what, 300mm on 135 film, right? Were you across the street? :P

If you want to practice shooting lo^H^Hsports just get a game schedule and go to the game. No one will even notice you unless you dress and act like a troll. Being uncomfortable makes people uncomfortable.

i was on top of a 4-floor parking garage for gods sake.

you kind of answered your own question with that line. if someone's gonna take pictures of me playing a sport or something, id rather them be on the ground near the game instead of way the hell away from some secluded place in a tree or something.

Plus, you'll get better photographs closer to the action, as a general rule.

Good angle. Tell them that your distance provides a stands-feel to the image and shows off their form without showing off their "form" as side shots would do. Hang around more often, be friendly, tell them why you're there.

And more in the vein of "general critique," the composition is wanting. There is nothing in the frame but dirt and a centered player.

I've a feeling why, too. I've shot a great deal with the S3IS, and using its autofocus is generally not a good idea when taking shots that pass quickly, unless the subject is radically changing distance frequently.

The S3IS’s autofocus takes too much time, so that one doesn’t have time to compose the shot after one gets a changing subject, like the player, in focus using autofocus. Hence, centered composition in this photograph, like if one used the default autofocus point for the S3IS and then pressed the shutter.

Suggestion: bump your aperture up to at least f/5 or f/5.6, f/8 if it doesn't put too much of the photograph in focus and doesn't underexpose the photograph, and manually pre-focus the camera. Almost no shutter lag- none, for all practical purposes, so long as review is turned off- and no focusing lag. One of the advantages of point-and-shoots is that their smaller sensors mean that pre-focusing is easier and more practical in more situations than DSLRs and most film cameras, because the smaller the recording surface the more depth of field. (I don't know how their sensor sizes compare to APS and 110mm cameras.)

Almost anyone who decides to actually shoot with a lens that big deserves to be smacked upside the head with it.

I'm pretty sure professionals use that kinda lens for sports photography.

Isn't that the huge lens Canon decided to make a prototype of and not sell, because it was too large for practical use?

I think that's a Canon lens, and this is the largest lens Canon makes:

And it's not that.

I really couldn't say for sure though. It is huge. So maybe you have to be ridiculously far away from the subject. The only situation I could think this is valid is would probably be in a golf type situation, but even then, I think this is a bit overkill. All I really know for sure is that basketball photographers have no need for anything remotely that large.
>> Arrows !3GqYIJ3Obs
Oh no, they sell it. Sports Illustrated owns 2. And the CEO of Oakley owns one as well. They go for about $80,000 a piece.

HOLY HELL. my threads NEVER get bumped. i feel special.

Allow me to clarify. I was bored today and for those of you that arent familiar with me yet (i'm getting to know a few of you, like ac and liska) i am a complete noob. i have no formal training whatsoever and am kind of gleaning what i can from this and other photo boards as well as flipping through bookson photography though i don't have the funds to pick one up and my library has nothing. i didn;t feel comfortable asking them to let me shoot because i was just kind of fucking around on my old campus. i took a whole bunch of miscellaneous shots like flower macros etc. i wouldnt feel too good promising them pgotos cause they all turn out like this one -- wanting.

and as for you...
you make me... uncomfortable...

That's why practice makes perfect. If you are there, and establish a relationship with the team, you'll eventually get better, they'll get comfortable and you can start sharing your photographs with them if you want, and they do too. That's how I ended up being the photographer for a hot air ballooning company. I just said "hi".

You can't do photography alone. Meaning, you're always going to have to establish relationships with people. That's ok, stop and listen to them, let them get to know you and you them. You choose one subject, then shoot it until you learn it. try something different, from a different angle, until you find something that works.

Another good reason to use the 1200 f/5.6: You're taking pictures of wild lions.
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
>>42794
well see i'm not that into sports photography. i was just dicking off and learning my camera's basics. trying to use Tv and continuous shooting to get a nice action shot or 2. i don't really want to establish a relationship with the girl's softball team. too manly :P

i guess from now on i'll just ask. HEY GUYS I'MA TAKE YOUR PICTURE OK

Make up fake business cards for a local stock photography company. Carry around some fake release forms or something that say if the image sells then they can make some money.

Or, actually, set up a real stock photography company with real release forms and try to make some moneys?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j

Too manly? You're too manly? Dude, maybe I need to smack you. Or, wait, are you saying the girls are too manly? Hmm. You don't HAVE to do that with the team, but if you're there taking pictures, them being able to know who's photographing them while they're practicing is a big deal, and they might be more at ease. If you remain mysterious and take pictures, you might get sort of creepy and asked to leave. Just a suggestion :) If you want action shots and live near an ocean or a lake, you can always go there, hang out by the pier (no one really cares about that) and photograph the jet skiiers or the surfers. Less people-relations if you want to look at it that way.

>>42845
I think he was saying the softball players were too manly. Which I can understand, although there's a hell of a lot to be said for girls with strong leg muscles...

But yeah, if you're out in the open obviously taking photographs, you look like a photographer. If you're up on a parking garage skulking in the shadows taking photographs, you look like some sort of perv planning to take the pictures home so you can vigorously fap to them.

So the key, if you're a perv planning to get pictures to fap to, is to take your pictures out in the open where everyone can see you.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>42847

OH! well, i didn't mean for him to try and pick up the players, not my intention, hehehe. Although that'd be sort of entertaining. "How'd you two meet?" "Well, i was stalking her from the top of a parking garage..."

Anyway, in all seriousness,>>42847

i just wanted a nice angle. i keep to myself too much and was too disinterested in sports shots to stop them to ask if i could photograph them. and stop calling me a perv. i'm not the one who first mentioned the leg muscles of my subject here. although i do suppose you're right. my current girl is made of play-doh (slim, shapely play-doh, but doh nonetheless) and on second glance the gams on my subject here do look healthy in comparisson. hmm.

Yeah, but they are a little chunky. The best thing, I think we can all agree, is slim, shapely, and healthy and toned.
