yes, if you have the money... if not (you guys are gonna hate me for this one). might i suggest an olympus e-10. can be had for 100-200 american. has live view, with flip-out lcd. has great image quality. very strong, and robust. with the macro attachment, it can do close to 1:1.

I've found that just about any camera is good for a starter. It ain't so much the camera, although it helps immensely, but the techneque used behind it. Sure you've heard all that but its da troof. In regards to the EOS 400D/Digital Rebel XTi/EOS Kiss Digital X it'll do everything your point and shoot will do except better however it'll shit all over your photographs, just like a point 'n shoot, if you donno wtf you're doing. It can do what you want it to do but can you do what you want to do with it?
