1) Set camera on tripod or stable surface
2) Shutter speed to a few seconds
3) Paint with LED or something that is bright
4) ???
5) Profit!

i really like this picture. not because of the light paintings, but because of the little back story told by the portraits. the guy in the center is (of course) the photographer. he's glamorous, hip, passionate and oh-so-trendy. he shoots canon, his dream camera is a 5D. that's his girlfriend on the right. she's strong-willed, opinionated, and makes sure everyone knows she's as smart as she is beautiful. she's into photography too, and probably owns a Canon 20D.

the schlub on the left is the everyman. his name is probably todd or greg, and he has no idea why his best friend dragged him along to go make cliche light painting photos with his crazy bitch girlfriend. todd just wants to go to the bar, maybe get a burger and talk about the upcoming football season. fuck this 12:35am photography shit.

Because they're not in any one place long enough for them to properly expose/show up.

Think of each fraction of a second's exposure as a seperate image but at VERY low opacity. If you keep the same thing in one place long enough, the consecutive fractions add up to a darker, more defined object.

If you yourself and your body moving, the frames can't stack up enough to make you show in the frame. Be careful, however, as dark blurring can occur on lighter backgrounds. Dark backgrounds are best for things like this.

You certainly made my day with that one.
I'll start using these lines myself.
