Alright /p/. I'll be photographing my contingent in a street parade tomorrow night. Gear:
-Canon EOS 400D
-18-55 f/3.5-5.6
-Two batteries

I am debating whether or not I should bring the 50mm along, owing to the hassle of changing the lens along with the telephoto-ic focal length - I will be travelling along within the contingent.

Any nifty tips for my limited equipment? It will be dark, with some event lighting. 7pm-11pm most probably.

Picture totally unrelated.

As you're not shooting anything that will be printed what...larger than 6x8? The 18-55 should be fine. You're in full light, and image quality shouldn't be too big a consideration.

A change of perspective can take a bland shot to something slightly better.

Read his post again:
>It will be dark, with some event lighting. 7pm-11pm most probably.

Bring the 50. f/1.8 is win if you're in a low-light situation. If these shots are just going to be shrunk down to 1024x632 and displayed on a web page or something, don't be afraid of iso800 and 1600.

I can think of two approaches to this:

1. Use primarily the fifty. Adopt a style focused primarily on portraiture- done right, a portrait can tell as much as a more conventional short of shot for this sort of thing.
2. Use primarily the kit lens. Adopt a style that makes heavy use of flash- not just for illumination, but for effect. Work the flash into your style.

If you've just got the pop-up, make a simple diffuser for it: cut appropriately, roll up a little, and tape together a relatively thin piece of paper. Not the ideal solution, but it's better than absolutely direct flash.

The best zoom lens in the world is a 50 prime and a fast pair of legs

Except on a crop sensor. Then the fifty becomes a 75. Great normal lenses become great portrait lenses.

On a crop sensor, a normal lens is either a 28 or 35, depending on whether you want something closer to the "true normal" of 43mm or something closer to the traditional 50mm "normal."

that's some tough stuff
If you can steal or make a monopod, do eet. You're going to need any help you can get, even at 1600, if you want to use that kit lens. Unless that's some really phenominal event lighting ;P
Good luck, hope to see the results soon

Will hevily depend on ISO 800 and 1600 - originally I was too scared to even consider them. How differently do they affect the photographs when compared between S(Fine) and L(Fine) picture sizes?
>>66687
Will prolly go with option 1 considering I only have two batteries for the whole trip. Doesn't mean I won't be using the 18-55 though, but changing while walking in the dark isn't exactly easy.

>>66708
I'll have my tripod filling in the role of monopod - ain't a good one, but it does the job.

I'll try to be artistic once in a while, but the purpose of me being there is to document the parade. As such, don't expect too much from me.

Sure it is.
1. Press unlock button, give lens a quarter turn (just enough to get past the latch, not enough to fall off)
2. Take out Lens #2
3. Remove back cap from Lens #2 and swap with Lens #1
4. Put back cap on Lens #1

Agreed, I change lenses a lot during gig shooting (Usually between 50 for full body shots, 135 for face/closeups, 18-55 for whole band/stage shots), I should really invest in a good zoom.

I'm assuming you have a bag of some sort? If you don't treat your lenses as if they're ultra frail like some people do, then you should be fine, easy to swap lens, then caps, then drop one lens in the bag and take shots with the new one.

>How differently do they affect the photographs when compared between S(Fine) and L(Fine) picture sizes?

Shoot large, unless for some reason you need the Hard Drives space. You can always resize them later.

Better yet, shoot RAW. Better results, particuarly in difficult shooting situations like this.

>I only have two batteries for the whole trip
How long is this parade? It's not like a flash is some battery vampire, and if it's an external flash it should have its own batteries.

>I'll try to be artistic once in a while, but the purpose of me being there is to document the parade. As such, don't expect too much from me.

Don't be afraid to "get artistic." An artsy photo will say even more about an event than just some snapshot.

I was asking about noise. Is the noise level the same at ISO 800/1600 when I use different image sizes, or is it not?

>>How long is this parade? It's not like a flash is some battery vampire, and if it's an external flash it should have its own batteries.
I don't have an external flash. This parade's length is stated in my opening post.

Noise is less noticeable at lower resolutions. You should still take them at maximum resolution, though.

Lots of people here have Rebels- could one of them tell us how much steady use of the on-camera flash the Rebel's batteries can take?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>66995
I don't hardly ever use the flash on my rebel, so I don't really know.
>> Anonymous
>>66995
as per the manual from memory the camera will take 400ish pics with half of them with the flash and 600 without flash so doing a little bit of math would say approx 200ish if all of them use the flash?
>> Anonyfag of Borneo !bHymOqU5YY
>>67028
If you use the flash on normal power. When I use it, I usually reduce the power to -1 and shoot in JPEG instead of RAW, so the battery might last longer than what was quoted.

shows how nice the 50mm/f1.8 lens is, lets you shoot at 1/50sec in this light!
and the noise at ISO1600 is really not bad for a, lets face it, very basic camera. nice pic.
>> Anonyfag of Borneo !bHymOqU5YY
As advised, I brought the 50mm f/1.8 along. But it didn't turn out too well since the focal length is too long for close-up shots. With crowds lining both sides of the street, I only have the front and back part to go. The density of the parade itself made any long distance shot impossible.

Also brought my tripod along, which I used as a monopod. It really helped! I've also learned to embrace ISO 1600 and 800, they are quite simple to fix in Lightroom.
