It is an attempt at still life. Your cropping sucks. Most of the forward part is OOF. Try again.

cropping? as in composition?

- you try getting every part of the apple in focus with this macro lens..

No, you're the photographer. *You* try getting every part of the apple in focus with that macro lens.

You were at f/3.5. According to the EXIF, your max was f/3.1. You don't seem to have tried to get any DoF at all.

No, he's right. Your EXIF shows your exposure as f/3.5, ISO 200, 1/100th of a second. It's an apple. You do not need a 1/100th of a second shutter. Even a ten minute shutter would be okey-dokie.

This is much better. Considerate cropping combined with DOF, composure and shadow detail. Are you taking notes 112404?

The maximum aperture would be 2.8 as i'm prety sure he's using a 105mm 2.8 VR, the maximum however does change when the magnification factor is changed. But the DoF essentially remains the same...

not entirely sure how it works as i only had a day to play with one.

But yeh, as AC said. Stopping it down to f/4 or 5.6 would have helped to get the rest of the apple in 'focus'
