I just got the d40 kit (with the 18-55 lens). I'm pretty new to photography - my girlfriend, uncle, and grandfather are all serious photographers, and I've always had a chubby for photographers, but never got into it.

Either way, I'm looking to new lenses. I'm not planning on picking a new one up until I learn to get what I can out of my kit lens, but I'm still looking. Obviously I'm limited as to what I can get by the lack of an internal focus motor (right?), but I'm still curious.

Only AF-S or Sigma's HSM lenses will autofocus on the D40. As far as new lenses, what are you looking for? It's kinda hard to read your mind.

I know this sounds stupid, but I'm really just looking for what's available for my camera right now. I knew that I was limited to AF-S, but wasn't aware that the HSM lenses would autofocus on my D40.

I'm high as hell so what I say might not make sense.

Google D40 lens compatability list.

Am I the only one who noticed that he said he had a chubby for photographers in the same sentence that he said his uncle and grandfather were serious photographers? Ewww.

you aren't *limited* on what lens you can use/get for the D40, its just if you want AF or not.
AF-s, AF-I or Sigma's HSM will work *completely* and AF.
AF lenses (ie non AF-s, AF-I or Sigma's HSM) will also work *completely* BUT just will not AF.

i sound like a broken recored repeating myself over and over, many ppl belive since that it cannot AF on AF lenses that the lens wont work at all on the D40. ppl jump to assumptions without learning something.

Will non af-s lenses still meter? I've read that officially they can't, but I've heard reports saying otherwise.

only pre-AF lenses wont meter, thats pre-AI, AI AI-s and AI-p.
the only difference between AF and AF-s/i is the focusing mechanism.

That answers one of my questions - I was under the impression that lenses pre af-s wouldn't meter on my d40. I suppose I was wrong.

When I said "girlfriend" i meant "I'm fucking my grandfather". I apologize for the confusion.

Buy a prime lens (as in not a zoom). They're better to learn with, and you get more for your money. More as in. . much better looking shots than the equivalent shot you would have gotten using a same-priced zoom lens zoomed to that particular point (or even a more expensive one for that matter).

It's limiting. . but in a kind of nice way?

Dangerous path, that is. Once he gets a taste of the good life he might not want to go back.

This is was I was thinking about. I was taking shots at a concert the other night and they all came out like shit. I went online, read a bunch of websites, and they all recommended using a larger aperture to absorb more light. Looking around, fixed-length lenses seemed to have wider maximum apertures.

I'm regretting not buying a used d50 now. :(

50 1.8 is good, cheap and sharp.
tamron 17-50 2.8 is an excellent replacement for the kit lens. much sharper, much closer focusing.

Oh, and 35mm primes if you want something closer to 50mm, but I don't know much about those. I like shorter normals, closer to the "true normal" of 43mm.

but Tamron 17-50/2,8 doesn't have focus motor, Sigma 18-50/2,8 HSM would be a much better choice

I'm going to be honest and say that right now, I'm far too lazy to deal with using another camera as a light meter. I wouldn't know what to do with that information. Thanks, though.

>>96826
If I had a dollar for every time I heard "everything will work except for ____" and then I find out that other things don't work, I'd have at least thirty dollars.

>>96833
I'm not looking to replace the kit lens. I'm probably going to end up sticking with the kit and the 50mm prime and not pick up new lenses until I decide to retire my d40. Which, the way it's looking right now, won't be that long.

The same thing you do with the information on the meter in your camera.

Point camera at scene, set aperture, fiddle with ISO and shutter speed until it hits +-0.

But there's the AF primes that'll meter fine.
