please excuse me if this is a stupid question. i'm kinda poor and i need to buy a camera. is this ok? canon a470

I guess.... for £70 it really wont be great, check out the cheaper sony stuff aswell and maybe olympus

I used one of these for a while. It's got a surptisingly good macro mode, but general photography with it is not that great - it has too many pixels (noise!), overcompresses the images, and has very little manual control.

I'd suggest spending another 30-40% and getting one of the squarer bodied powershots - the next range up, for more control. If you can find an older one with less pixels, it might be cheap and have less noisy images.

Cheap, yes, but Canon's been keeping the noise pretty constant as pixel density has increased. Their technology for eliminating noise gets better with each generation just like their technology for cramming more photosites on a given size chunk of silicon.

Ah. I wasn't sure about that across their whole Canon compact range. I have also been using a Powershot 4-something from about 4 years ago that is 4 Megapixels and it has way less noise than the one in the OPs pic.

Get Powershot 5, 6 or 7. Don't get this.

I use an A470, I've found it fairly good for most things except portraiture. I can't afford anything better tbh but it does a good job, particularly with macro.
