Hey /p/, i'm about to get my firsts lenses (i only have a Kit Lens, and it's borrowed) and i'm thinking either:
1- Get the 85mm f/1.8 AND a very good 50mm f/1.8 MKI
or
2- Get a 50mm f/1.4 and wait for getting the 85, maybe several months.

I would also like to know if the 85mm its usable for indoor (and outdoor, why not) sports, rock concerts (i hope it's well written), portraits, night-handheld shots, and so on.

Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

It's all about working distance and subject size/planned composition. You've got to think of that too.

You could use the 85 for all the things you asked about there.

oh wait, you said 85 and 50

Would you explain your point a little more?
>>198969
Yes, i was actually thinking that in my XTi would be like 136mm, so it's kind of a long range, comparing to almost 80 with the 50mm.

I would go #1
85 is usable indoor for stuff like shoulder up portraits, but you'll mainly be using it outdoor and for the other things you said.

50mm 1.4 is pretty win though.

Why not 24mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.8? I feel like the difference between the 24 and 50 is more significant and useful than the difference between the 50 and 85.
I feel the ability to shoot with the 24 indoors outweighs the reach gained with the 85.
I mean, you can always crop down an image that is too wide, but you can't add more around the edges of a shot that wasn't wide enough.

Me again.
Alternatively, why not get a little more reach by going with the 100mm f/2 and a 50mm f/1.8. Yeah it'll cost a little bit more, but I think it'd be worth it.

or even just the 28mm 1.8.
24mm 2.8 is kinda expensive isnt it? (for a non usm prime that isn't faster than f2)
>> OeeeT
OP here, also getting soon Tamron 17-50 2.8

Eh, Amazon showed a used 24mm at 300 new, a good deal cheaper than the 412 of the 28mm.

But yeah, I forgot about the 28 1.8

I mean /I guess/.

85mm is the same as my 4x zoom point and shoot at full zoom. There is no way I'd ever use that indoors. 50mm is pushing it. I wish they'd make a cheap 30mm for crop cameras.

Do you have any idea of what you are talking about?
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY

They do.
35mm f2

That's ok, but I'm talking sub 100 dollars here. For 240, I'd want USM.

Sigma is close. I think Canon makes something in the 250-300 range with USM.

This is not a hobby you take up if you want to save money.
Buy either the 28/1.8(400, cro mabs) 35/2(200, loud), or Sigma 30/1.4(enjoy your front focus).

Pick your poison.

hai /p/.

Tamron 17-35 + Canon 50/1.4, acceptable combo for this predicament? My situation is similar and I'm considering those lenses.

85 for gigs should be pretty ok, so long as you are photographing _things_ and not places you shouldnt have any problem with tele~ and tele lens.

lol you kidding!

50mm was too long for me in an indoor gig. i wouldnt fucking dream of using my 85 lol!>

He said outdoor rock gigs, but then a decent zoom > primes for gigs tbh.

Also in bars n shit i hardly use my 50, i stick with 11-18.

>50mm was too long for me in an indoor gig.

What would you suggest instead?
I've been using a 50mm f1.4 lens for product photography and I'm finding that while it's pretty good for smaller items it tends to be a bit long when I'm shooting a larger item like a messenger bag or hooded sweatshirt.

I'm really in love with my 50 1.4 (my first prime lol) but I don't know much about lenses. Is there a specific length of shorter prime that I should look into?

Also what would be good for waist-up portraits?
Or full-body portraits?
I've been using my 50 1.4 for everything, and I'm sure there are better options out there...

The answer to both your questions is a normal prime, 28, 30, or 35mm.

Front focus on which body? I remember they were front-focusing on Rebels and XTs. (Supposedly they were better on the X0D line at the time.)

In my history with it, on an XTi/XSi both, it's dead-fucking-on with the center point.
