I woke up and was lookign for it too. I stil wonder how he managed to get visas to go there officially as a journalist/photographer. And I doubt he would be able to take stuff he mentioned as a tourist, because even d300 alone is a no go (they will take all "big cameras & lenses" for safekeeping in beijing). And you can't stay for 2 months, you can get only 2 week visas for tourists. Not to mention that their bureaus always check what are you going to do, you're always followed with one guide and one military, and you definitely can't photograph whatever you want. Only things on schedule, and things that might not put a bad light on kim (that's why I wonder even more how he got a permission to go hunt alcohol/drug addicts)

National geographic has de facto a monopol for photographers in there, but they were bribing kim with presents for many years. So basically... if the dude were from national geographic, he would not go taking photos of alcoholics, and he would definitely know what equipement he should take with him. But since he's not.. he has done something many photographers take as impossible Y_Y

...what?

did someone archive the thread? been away and missed it. sounds interesting.

I obviously deleted it.

There are extended visas for tourists, if you know where to go. You don't have to come from National Geographic.

As for camera gear, I've already spoken to so much real people I though it would be interesting to hear /p/'s say. It's not like I can't arrange my gear properly.

I hope you do realize you can't just wander around the town (unless you precised where you want to wander it in your journey schedule - there vanishes idea of real street photography) and enter "bars/pubs/restaurants" meant for local people, that makes contact with them much less possible. There is a damn good reason why it's forbidden to use local currency by tourists, the only contact with people you'll ever make are sellers authorised to deal with foreigers (they accept euros), tour guides (there's a lot of them tho... every nice place worth seeing has one), your personal tour guide and your assigned "protector". Man, when I had to take a metro, military dude ordered all natives to go out of the wagon before I could even enter it ^^;

Anyway, good luck with your journey. I hope that you'll see at least something that will be of interest for you, but take at least this advice for gear: If you really mean it, bring 2 point&shoot cameras that ***CAN NOT*** film with a lot of memory cards and a flash with optical slave trigger (no radio devices allowed - forget pocket wizzards, they WILL be confiscated) . These might save your ass because as I said, d300 (or any slr in that size) with longer tele is a no-go and they will most probably take it from you even before you arrive to Pyongyang (better case scenario - they will take only tele lens and not your body, so you can still slam 28 or 50mm prime on it).

Hey, so I guess there is one niche for the Sigma DP-1. ;)

I'm not going to repeat what he said, but in the other thread he described how he was getting his gear into the country.

OP might not be a westerner, too. If he's South Korean, a couple months of caloric restriction and he could pass for a tall North Korean.

We aren't going into any suburban areas. The buss is loaded on a ferry that lands on the coast. We will be documenting alcoholics and drug-addicts in small villages.

The thread was only supposed to be up for a few hours. For security reasons. This is posted from a prismed IP but I don't want to take the risk. For those who missed the other thread, the cam equipment will be welded into coompartments of the the frame of the bus. They'll have to take it apart to find them.
