its a little blurry

I just have to know... how much are they paying you?
>> Anonymous
blurry/out of focus. you might want to invest in a nice portrait lens if you plan on doing more weddings. the kit lens just isn't going to cut it, especially with lower light environments like indoors. the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 are both good or portraits, or the 35mm f/2 i hear is also good.

i only own the 50mm f/1.4 and i must say i love it for portraits. and no, im not rich and just opted for the more expensive one, i got it from my dad.

also, was there another photographer there with you or were you the main one?
>> Anonymous
OP here. It was a team of my Father and I doing the wedding. I actually do video and he does the stills. This was just the first time i brought my camera with. We got $500 for the day.

Thanks for the suggestions.

i guess you need to work up to the attractive couples?
srsly fat hook-nosed woman marries 50 year old man...nice haloish lighting on her hair, but nothing is going to save that...are all the empty seats a photographer's inside joke?

adding a wedding shot i've done
good lighting and backgrounds are paramount for weddings. Also motion blur = bad.

I avoid weddings though if i can, people expect a lot, and even charging $80 an hour (including editing time) means you only make about 1000$ a shoot, quoting more than that usually means they are looking for an experienced pro anyway.

Its also best to work in teams, candid shots help more than you think. and someone has to get shots of the location aswell.

yeah ive just been offered to do a wedding shoot for 4000$ but never done one before... only really worked with music.. any suggestions? id hate to turn it down for the money but never done one before
>> Anonymous

Don't do it. If you've never done one before, you might fuck up, and if you fuck up, that's a once-in-a-lifetime event that you've ruined for your customer. See if you can find someone more experienced to tag along with on your first few.

is it a jewish wedding? catholic? protestant? They all have different rules for when you can take a photo, where you're allowed to be in the church, whether you can use a flash or not. You need to know the differences and rules.

Furthermore, there's a list of some 60 photos that you NEED to get during the four separate stages of photography during a wedding.

You need to know how to balance flash and sunlight. You'll need a good flash, preferably an SB-800 or some monstrous Metz flash.

If you have to ask for suggestions on how to shoot a wedding, you should probably not be charging 4000 bucks.

I'm going to be doing at least 2 family weddings next summer, and I'm still nervous about those. I don't know how I'd feel photographing a stranger's wedding.

I had a D200 there aswell, but the D50 and 50mm combination is incredibly usefull for weddings, Its like the perfect focal length for 1-4 group people shots, Also its dirt cheap and you can always open up the aperture if needed.

D200 had an 80-200 af-s on it, Thats a fantastic lens aswell but It got most of its use earlier in the day at the actuall ceremony.

to OP:

its an ok shot. button his jacket put his hand in his pocket, turn her in more to lower her profile. Find a better background in the church.

Nice. I use a d70's with a 50mm lens and I still cant get a finished clean shot like that. By any chance can you post a before and after photo shop image?

your shot looks a little underexposed and maybe you should try a faster shutter speed as well to

Ill try that but for some weird reason there is a significant difference in the vibrancy between the image on my computer and the one I posted.

Both my shots were outdoors at around 5:00 ish, thats great timing for good lighting. So thats 90% of the reason my pics look better.
also one obvious thing about your pic is the lack of a bounce flash, and it looks like the flash was the only major light source.
Open the aperture up and use the flash more for fill, OR buy an sb-600 and bounce it off the cealing (Better yet do both!)

Pic related in its straight out of the cam, I don't have any unedited copies of that pic anymore so heres a different one.

Also, set the color mode on the d70 to III for vivid colors (beware of red skin though!)

Dude, shutter speed is more than three times faster on what he took there, and the 18-200mm AF-S lens he's using has VR.
>> Vincent

>>74765
Also heres a shot with the flash bounced off the cealing, note also that the shutter speed and aperture (+ISO) combination let the natural background lighting add some color to the pic, Gives it a more natural feel and looks waay better.

(ISO = 640 if it doesn't show up in exif)

Wow, what a wonderful range of compositions you use; was everyone drunk at this wedding or was it just you?
>> Anonymous
>>74776
Thanks for the advice. Ill keep the ISO and shutter speed in mind next time and try to play around with the bounce from flash.

Its a wedding I do believe everyone is drunk. I would elaborate but I must have forgotten everything about the night, (except how to change my cameras settings) since my drunken stupor obviously meant I was only able to take 3 of 4 pics at varying angles from vertical that may or may not have a similar tilt (albeit mirrored) to the other 2 that pre-ceeded it.

Hey might aswell throw in another from my first wedding! Sorry I wasn't drunk at this wedding though :)
