One time, on a shoot for a client, I found myself in Nepal hundreds, nay, thousands of miles from the nearest camera shop and I had to slay a yak with my spare strap and a broken 50/1.4 to fashion a sort of brush t remove any dust. Then I sliced it open and used stomach acid to get rid of any spots the yak hair brush missed.

Now there's a painting of me in a Buddhist monastery high in the Himalayas.

I start out with a fine-grit sandpaper (say 400-500) to get rid of the gunk on the sensor, then add a coat of clear nail polish to fill in any grooves that leaves behind.

Camera-buildingfag here. I must say you're wrong with your first suggestion, ac. I'd start from the 500 - 600 for the smoother finish. Your suggestion is arguably more thorough however, therefore I must heed it.

I just buy a new camera body when there's any dust on the mirror or on the sensor. Dust permanently etches the coating on the sensor, making it useless.

Entertaining.

Seriously, though, I just keep my aperture wider than f/16 and ignore the problem.

Pretty much. Although I have borrowed a 5D that was dusty enough there were 8-12 brutal spots at f/5.6... That one needed cleaning.

How much does it cost for a professional to clean the sensor? How about those "sensor cleaning kits" which are included with some camera packages, are they any good?

For serious here, guys (though I did lol at the yak slaying bit.)

Most of the time an air blower will do the job. Go to your local camera store and get one. Mine cost 8 dollars and has never failed me.
