If you can afford the XSi, go for it. However, the XS is the less expensive version and would suit you very well. I chose to get it over the d60. Has better color and less noise across the ISOs

Go buy a film slr for fifty bucks at your pawn shop.

Far easier to use? I disagree. I find the XSi significantly more usable than the D60 - even ignoring the featureset upgrades.

Oh, and noise is lower on the XSi (or even XS) than on the D60.

Nice troll.
Get whichever you want. They're equally easy to use and noise levels are pretty comparable.

(As a Canonfag, however, I feel I would be remiss if I did not point out that Nikon only has two fast prime lenses that will autofocus with the D60, whereas the Canon can fully use every lens Canon has made since the EOS switchover in mid 80s)

XSi has too many issues with auto focus and metering and white balance, D60 fails at autofocus with majority of nikon lenses, get the D80 and call it a day.

Learn to custom white balance. The only thing that sucks I have found thus far is the 9 point AF. I prefer to shoot center point as I can choose my focus point. If I want to focus elsewhere I just focus at that point, lock the focus and reframe. The other way is to pick a focus point from the 9 points that is closest to where you want the focus point. I have also not had any issues with metering. Learn your settings. Stick to manual mode until you have them down pat. Also make sure to up the sharpen a couple of notches since it's set low by default. Complaints of fuzzy out of focus images are usually down to this.

D60<XSi<D80

Unless talking about PQ when you're manually settings everything, XSi wins.

That actually may very well be true.

White balance isn't an issue for me, since I'm doing pretty much universally custom white balance and shooting RAW exclusively.

I pretty much use the center point or manually focus, and focus accuracy has been damn good so far. I get a few out of focus shots when using a single outer point, but it's acceptable.

Spot metering + manual works out great. Occasionally aperture priority is alright, and in either mode going by the histogram = win.

I'm really not sure that there are any significant flaws, other than it being a sub-$1k camera. The focus issues simply haven't affected me - I don't think they were all _that_ common to begin with.

Imo, from fooling around with the D80, it seems quite similar. I can see how some people would like the top LCD, but I don't. I generally change all my settings in the viewfinder anyway. Sensor's not quite as good, but immeh.

If you prefer Nikon handling/lenses/accessories, go D80. If you prefer Canon handling/lenses/accessories, go XSi. I like Canon's lens lineup more than Nikon's, and I like the feel/usability of their cameras more. I went Canon. Really, just go try them out.

Depends on how much [focus and] recomposing, and what aperture. At f/1.2-2, you can't really recompose. At f/5.6+, you can recompose quite a bit. To say that all focus+recomposed pictures will be out of focus simply isn't true.

/Goes off to [not]focus and recompose @ 16mm/f8 equiv with focus @ 1.5M.
