'Sup /p/,

I just bought a used Pentax K10D kit.
What accessories do I need to get started, and what brands do you suggest?

I figure I need a lens protector and some sort of protector for the viewscreen on the back, but is there anything else?
>> Anonymous
bag

uv filter or hood = lens protector, unless you're a faggot and somehow bought a lens without a lens cap, then get a lens cap

plastic film for LCD screen if you're anal

memory cards, extra batteries

battery grip to feel elite/pro

come back later for real equipment questions ie, lens and flash

Well, I'd be interested in flash recommendations too.
I'd rather go used/cheapish, but anything is cool. Brands to look for/avoid whatever.

As far as lenses I've heard that the kit lens for this is pretty good, but I'm interested in a wide angle lens. Nothing retarded like a fisheye, but something I can use to capture small spaces & tall buildings.

Tips about old glass to look for or avoid would be good too.

fixed: sell it and buy a canikon , cut your losses.

see, im not the only one who gives this advice!
clearly some people have enough sense still left in them.

A lens protector/UV filter is more or less necessary, but be sure to buy a good-ish brand like Hoya so your pictures don't end up ruined by flair. As for lenses, buy some used K-mount glass from keh.com or ebay if you want to take a risk. You can't go wrong with any of the 50mm f/1.4s that are usually under $100 if you don't care about autofocus.
The LCD screen is already covered with plastic and is almost unscratchable from my experiences, don't bother buying a protector for it.

Canikon users are stuck up. Don't listen to them.

I was gonna swing by Ritz on my way home and get a Quantaray UV Multi-Coated Filter ($15.99)... Is that a shit brand I should avoid?
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ

it's ritz's shitty house brand, usually manufactured by some unknown conglomerate like bowen optics and sold at 500% markup.

Interesting article on UV filters:
http://photo.net/equipment/filters/

I'm thinking either the Tiffen 812 or the Hoya 81B...
Not sure if I want a warming filter though... Sounds like it would be great for portraits, but I plan on mostly doing architecture/product shots.

Though I guess nothing is stopping me from buying multiple filters.

IMHO a UV filter is only really useful for landscapes and stuff.
I've had issues with a dirty filter, making every shot look like it was taken through stained glass.

You almost never need a color filter if you're shooting digital. Just set a custom white balance or fix it in post from the RAW file if your camera can shoot RAW.

>>157600

I find this whole post hilarious because it's that guy with the 52 or 55mm polarizers and the flare thing.

>> IMHO a UV filter is only really useful for landscapes and stuff.

Can you explain this? Digital sensors are not affected by UV.

The only real purpose of a UV filter would be uh, protection.
>> Anonymous
OP here,

Yeah, to be clear I want a UV protector 99.9% just to protect my lens. If it can also help make my images richer and more saturated prior to taking them into Pshop that's awesome but not my main concern.

I find this whole post hilarious because it's that guy with the assumption im only talking about digital.

Also: for protection it's shit.
Who the hell is gonne bump their lens into a table egde or is gonna rub sand into it?
Being a bit more careful saves you about $70 foor a peice of glass that doesnt even do jack shit on a digital basically.

What a fucking dipshit.
Have you priced UV filters lately?
$10-$15 for Tiffen or Hoya.

Stupid fucking cunt.

on the other hand, 70 bucks (uv filters cost that much? i doubt it.) means you never have to clean your front element, or worry about sand or water or wind or basically any of the elements. sure, it can add some glare once in a while, but 99.99% of the time they're invisible if you keep them clean.

that it's not a waste of fucking money, that they are a suitable replacement for a lens cap.
>> M/A !n21TE7QU8U

Seriously, what the fuck?
I didnt even mention lens caps.
Stop wasting your time and go fucking discuss stuff that actually is somewhat useful.
Im out, this is going nowhere.

M/A proves time after time he is one of the biggest retards on /p/.

>> Anonymous

M/A, you're "out" because you erroneously claimed that a $10 lens protector cost $70 and made yourself look like a fucking fool.

If a decent UV filter really cost $70 then yes, it would be a waste of money. Better to spend that $70 towards another lens or something.

But for $10-$15 a UV filter is a great idea for any camera that can have one. Sure, yes, be careful and all that, but for those unplanned incidents where something goes wrong that $10 piece of useless glass can save your fucking lens.

Next time before you start spouting off numbers try actually researching the cost of what you're talking about so you don't look like such a fucking dipshit.

UV Filters

Argument for:
1. Adds some protection to the lens' front element from scratches, accidental bumps, some subset of drops, etc
2. Cuts out some UV haze

Argument against:
1. Adds another piece of glass that could cause flare, vignetting, and general image degradation, especially with a cheap one
2. If you get a not-cheap one to combat the above problems... it's not cheap
3. Doesn't protect against all lens damage (and therefore provides a false sense of security). More lens damage would be prevented by keeping a hood on the lens (which would also noticeably increase image quality).

Both sides have valid arguments. I personally don't use a UV filter because I trust myself not to drop a lens and I'm too lazy to deal with 'em.

Some of the highest-rated UV filters are in the $10-$20 range.
How is that not cheap?

Also why not just use a UV filter AND hood?
2x protection = 2x awesome.
