Hey guys, looking for a suitable replacement for Nikon D40 kit lens and was looking at the VR 55-200mm G lens. I can get it at a reasonable [£195ish] price and was just wondering whether it's a justifiable add on, considered I love non-posed portraiture [catching them without subject seeing] and tight focus.

It would not be a suitable replacement for the kit lens. It's a totally different range of focal lengths.

It would be an excellent addition to the kit lens though.

sorry, mindslip there.
I meant as an addition, considered it doesn't cover 18-55mm.
Sorry.

Then it's good enough as it's VR and all. The cheapest VR lens if I recall correctly from PopPhoto.

The 55-200mm VR will complement the 18-55mm well. If you like the kit lens, then you should like this. The 55-200mm VR is the cheapest VR lens, roughly half that of the 24-120mm VR and 70-300mm VR.

I have this lens.
I use it on a D40x.
Great price. Great optics. Very sharp, reasonably fast AF too. Best deal on a telephoto Nikon lens today.

BUT

As the others have said, it definitely doesn't replace the 18-55. You often have to stand pretty far away from your subject. In fact, it won't even focus at subjects closer than 0.7 meters.

Sounds like you should get it OP, no-one's mentioned a single downside.

It can be a bit soft at full length, and of course it's only a 5.6 so it's not always going to get sharp images depending on what you're shooting.

Still a great, cheap lens for someone who doesn't want to fork out triple price for the 70-200 f/2.8.
