How would i do this picture?

In case my excellent drawing doesnt really help il explain. i want a picture of someone longboarding down a hill with a trail following them, and preferably them to be in ublurry at the bottom of the picture.

i know this would would involve some sort of flash but all i have is my on camera one. ive tried this during the day and it was to bright to do a long exposure with the processes i normally go by (super big aperture) so then i tried at night with a super small aperture and even some flash and all i got was a road with some lights and no longboarder.

Rear flash sync (Flash fires when boarder is quite close to you, probably around 5-10 feet away)
before that you want to drag ths shutter speed to around 1-2 seconds (probably underexpose by about 2 stops)

1-2 seconds isnt long enough though. hed have to be going super fast down the hill in which case you still wouldnt see him.

5-10 second exposure, bright street lighting, f/16 or f/22. Second curtain flash sync.

I've tried things like this as well. I have had descent results, I'll try to find my image later and upload it. What I recomend is getting on google and picking up a small AA battery operated flash. You can pick one up for 5-10 bucks. After that it's not to bad. Just find an appature that will give you a correct exposure over a period of 1-2 seconds of shutter speed.

After that it's all timing. Wait untill the lighting is right or alter it with light boxes. you can make cheap ones with card board boxes 100 wat lightbulbs and wax paper (supper cheap and shitty but it works. Start exposing film as soon long border is in range and then trigger the flash when your long boarder is at the eind of the run.

What would be best for this is guessing at the exposure time. Use the B function so your shutter is open as long as the shutter release button is heald down. (some new digital have these feature as well)

To really get the exposure right conisdering stepping down the exposre of your film or the iso of your digital.

Or if you want the SIMPLE version do the following.

Take a picture of a long border and photoshop it. The smudge tool can do layers.

Yup, the smudge tool CAN NOT do layers... I meant wonders.

Will any flash work on any camera? I dont have much money so a nice cheap flash would be perfect.

I have an Olympus E-510 if that helps
>> Beaumont
If you have a flash shoe on your camera almost any flash will work.

Not OP here.

My concern with this plan is that he would want to let go of the shutter a moment after the flash fires or else the blur of the rider will continue past the "frozen" spot where the flash was fired.

A camera with a bulb setting and a flash set to 2nd curtain sync will allow this to be done, but I don't know enough about the OP's equipment to say.

this is the flash im thinking about saving for. seems like a decent one from the reviews i read, and its way cheaper then like any of the others so thats very nice.

You need to use second curtain sync, if you camera has it. That will make the flash fire immediately before the shutter closes. If you don't do that, the flash normally fires when the shutter opens, so you will end up with the trail in front of your subject.

Check out this site-

That does a pretty good job of listing what you are working with. Your camera does offer a flash seeting called 'rear curtian'. Thats the same thing as 2nd curtain. Just give it a 2 second exposure with rear curtian flash turned on and you may be golden. As far as that flash that you are looking it, yeah, it'll work fine, i've actually been looking at the same flash for a while.

if you don't mind fully manual flash, a 285hv is fine too

This is>>133770here. That's my exact thought. Doing it manually DURING the exposure will make the trail continue. The rear curtain sync will cause the trail to stop at the frozen skater.

il have to mess with my camera. ive only used the flash a hand full of times so i dont know the settings much, usually i just mess with the power settings. ive used a setting called "Slow2 " or something and it fires the flash at the beginning and the end of the exposure.
