I wish I had bought a 30mm lens instead of this 50mm. The crop factor gives me a tad too much zoom for most of the pictures I want to take. Maybe getting a cheap film EOS would be a good idea...

I agree, the crops here (not the first 2) are either too narrow or not narrow enough, having a 30 or a 90 would have been nicer i think. A lot of the shots dont seem to have much composition, mostly due to the above.

Also a lot are quite dark, have you tried to brighten them up in photochop at all? You probably could have gotten away with shooting at 800 otherwise.

Yep. Individual critiques:

>>116658
This one could be sharper. Not enough DoF to get the whole thing in focus, which is a shame. It's not too bad at this resolution, but I'm betting it's worse large. You're famously able to handhold a 12 minute exposure with a 500mm autofocusing catadioptric supertele, so you should have no problem tightening up that aperture.

>>116657
In this one, on the other hand, the blurriness works. It has a great sense of motion with the motion blur of the leaves in the background combined with the line of the branch guiding the eye inwards into the frame. The whole picture looks like it's popping out at you.

Not Ragnarok, but the OMG NEGATIVELY CHARGED ASTEROID!

>>116665
Just get a 28mm or 35mm lens, unless you manually focus. Sigmas don't interface well with Canons, and your 30D is going to be much better than a bottom basement film Rebel.

That said, here you go.

Search for "film rebel" on eBay yields one going for $47.50 in an hour and fifty-six minutes with a 28-105 Tamron. Enjoy.

Don't buy a film rebel. They're about the shittiest cameras you can get, they're not even worth it if they're free. Especially with the prices on used film gear now, you can get a really good body for a very reasonable price.

>>116755
While I generally agree, free stuff is free, and $50 for a body and lens is pretty good, especially if (as the poster was looking for) he can use his current lenses on the body and this new lens on his current ones. True, they're not great, but $50 is probably the least he can satisfy what he was looking for.

I'm of the opinion that garbage is garbage, regardless of the price.

You can get an EOS A2 body from KEH for $37, or an EOS 1 for $114 both with 30 day warranties. He already has lenses, besides that tamron is a piece of junk anyway.

I just recently bought this lens at B&H for my 400D and man it is worth every penny I spent on it.
Also: It isn't an EF or an EF-S lens so if you ever upgrade there's always the option to continue using it later.

Well, yes, but better garbage that works instead of nothing that doesn't.

Say he only has $37. Not everyone has the money to just go and buy things, and there's many more people who technically have the money to buy all sorts of stuff, but can't really afford to.
>> Anonymous
>>116769
It is an EF lens.

>>116771Say he only has $37.
Then he should buy the A2, which is both cheaper and vastly better than the rebel. That was my point.

I've never heard of the A2, so I didn't know. Sorry.

Actually, I was thinking of getting an EOS 30 (Elan 7) for about $133 from KEH. I don't really know what the A2 is, but I'll go look it up right now.
>> Anonymous !SDPEsPMnww
Well shit, that's a tough decision. They've got very similar features, so I don't know which to choose. I suppose I should go with either the cheaper one or the newer one...

They're both good cameras. The A2 was higher end when it was introduced (it fell just below the EOS 1n in the product line), but the Elan 7 is newer. I had an A2 for almost ten years and it was a good camera. The only real complaint I could come up with is that the camera didn't have a solid metal-body feel like the EOS 1 series. I've only handled an Elan 7 once or twice, and I can't remember how it compared. I don't recall being bothered by it though.

For $133, however, I'd go with an EOS 1. It may not have all the focusing points and some of the wiz-bang gadgetry of the Elan 7, but it's a true tank of a camera. It will last you the rest of your life, even if you use it to pound the occasional nail or kill a small animal.
>> Anonymous !SDPEsPMnww
>>117009
I can't find any EOS 1 cameras of the EX quality or above on keh.com for $133.

Also, upon looking around on a bunch of different forums, most people seem to recommend the Elan 7 over the A2.
>> Anonymous
>>117072
You don't really need EX quality. If the film will advance, the shutter will work, and the viewfinder is clear, you have a camera that will do just fine.
>> Anonymous !SDPEsPMnww
>>117082
I'm just afraid of buying the "bargain" or "ugly" versions for fear that they'll stop working after 100 actuations.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>117086
A "bargain" EOS 1 is still an EOS 1. They'll take quite a huge amount of licking and keep on ticking.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>117086
if an EOS 1 is anything like a F5, it will most probably outlast you lol

KEH rates extremely conservatively. I've bought about a half dozen camera bodies from them in "bargain" condition, and they've all been extremely good. The worst I've seen was a couple minor scratches. They were better than the stuff I've bought from Adorama that was rated as "Excellent"

I also bought one item, a Nikon F4s body, that was rated as "Ugly." It definitely isn't pretty. There's a lot of brassing, some markings are worn off, and the ring around the viewfinder is broken, but I've had the camera for about four years and have put about 500 rolls of film through it and it still works flawlessly.

I also bought one item rated as "Excellent," and that it was. I couldn't distinguish it from new other than it didn't have the original box or paperwork.

I have no hesitation about buying or recommending "bargain" graded items from KEH. I'd get an "ugly" item if the price was right. Keep in mind that they warranty everything to work 100% for 30 days regardless of the condition rating, so you can try it out and if you don't think it's going to cut it, you can send it back.

Pic related- Hasselblad 2000FC body with 150mm f/2.8 Sonnar, both rated "bargain" from KEH.
