My work wants me to shoot our Santa pics with my own equipment. On my one day off. For regular pay. Should I do it just for the experience?

On the one hand I hate my job, and kids, and using my own shit w/o compensation, and my boss, and christmas. On the other, I'm be posting shit on /p/ and /b/ all day otherwise.
Part of me wants to do it just because I coudl use the practice.
pic unrelated, but awesome.

I had a similar offer from my employer once, and I told them there was no way in hell.

It's not hard to get experience shooting portraits, so it's not worth it to let them rip you off.

do it but only give them shitty pics
post good ones on here

If they can't insure your equipment, don't do it.
>> Anonymous
charge them post process time and make it ridiculously long (at least 3x on location)

It might be a good experience, but don't let them use you. Ask for something above your normal wage to make up for it. They are asking for something special and on your day off no less. Heck, most places would give you at least time and a half for that. I think you deserve more.

The santa is already a chick, a thin short one too. I'm sure most of the kids will be twice her size. Memphis is fatty country.

That just gives you more opportunities for hilarious images.

Goes on a resume, might as well.

resumes? this is photography. Your pictures are your resume.

your company is being a cheap bitch. They have to pay someone $3000 to do it professionally. You can use that to your advantage if you want (request $1200 in compensation). You can tell them you don't have the proper equipment and it would cost that much just to get the right body/lens/flash guns/light meters/diffusers/screens etc :D

regardless, it's on your day off. i'd tell them to fuck themselves and go take shots at my own leisure and use them in my portfolio. If they want you to take shots tell them to do it on days when you work.

That's what I mean. Shows as work experience, both in terms of the pictures and in terms of actually doing a photography job.

Not only do you need a portfolio, yes, but photographers DO need resumes and they DO need experience. Previously hired jobs, even if they don't pay a lot, can come in handy. Don't put your $$$$ at stake unless you have a REALLY big reputation and can claim it. Then again, it's up the OP In the end.

Example: my work asked my to go out an shoot photographs for one of our publications, during the day when I would normally work, for regular pay. Would I have liked more? Yeah, but, seriously. It was for the RSF Goldbook. Rancho Santa Fe is one of the most affluent and rich communities in the US. My payment? Having every RSF resident looking in the 2006 book and seeing my name right there in the front. It's REALLY come in handy on my resume & it was great experience.

there's a difference between a strategic pay cut and being taken advantage of.

1) unless lynx scribbled his/her name on a piece of paper and placed it in front of santa do you really think he/she would get any recognition from a company xmas shoot?
2) who looks at a company xmas photo? that's not something i could put in my portfolio and feel proud about
3) it's his _DAY OFF_. Even God rested on the 7th day. What you ask me to do on your time is one thing, asking me to do shit for you on MY time is another.
4) in my opinion, if you are at a level where this type of proposition sounds attractive (beginning) a leisurely trip to your local dog park/beach/etc would be much more beneficial to your portfolio than an underequipped static shoot.

a few shots of leaves, trees, and footprints in the sand beats out a canned smile any day. not to mention that it is _winter_. I live in sunny southern california and even I can grab some pretty awesome season photos.

even a full day of terrible shots is good for a n00b because at least you got time to get to know your equipment.

This is so funny in a couple ways. Nice work, anonymous.

Besides the obvious, there's...

"Hey, God, could you do x?"
"What you ask me to do on your time is one thing, asking me to do shit for you on MY time is another."

Say his boss or whomever it was, some parent, was happy with one of the photos Lynx took. He/She gave said person a business card and his/her information. They decided they liked the photo enough to 1- either recommend him/her to someone else, or call when it's time to get a family portrait done.

As i said before, it's up to the OP, but EVERYTHING is an opportunity. Who says that in the future, the company won't hire him for something more important with more money?

That's all i'm sayin.

He's prooved himself to be a mark that'll do whatever they want?

I didn't do it because I didn't think the risk to my equipment was worth it. And I had been having sex all night before and didn't want to get up in the morning. Apparently none of the people that showed up were impressed with our 19 year old 115lb santa, most of the kids were bigger than her.

Me, I'd have done it just for the chance to take pictures of a 19 year old chick in a Santa costume.

Also, get any good shots from the sex the night before? /r/?

A girl in a "Mrs. Claus" outfit might be hot, but not when she's got a big beard and padded to be enormously fat.

It might be fun to take some pictures of a tiny Santa with giant kids for the silliness of the scene.

I'm sure there's a fetish site for women dressed up as a fat bearded santa. Rule 34 etc.
