good evening /p/

I just got back from a family reunion. My great-grandfather, rest his soul, has passed on his old camera gear posthumously.

Turns out he was a nikonfag as well! I am rather stoked and thought you'd like to see it...

Body:
Unknown Nikon, anybody?

Lenses:
Nikkor 50mm f2.0
Vivitar 90-230mm f4.5
Topman MC 135mm f2.8
Carl Zeiss Macro JenaZoom 70-210mm f4.5-5.6

Comment too long. Clickhereto view the full text.

looks like a ftn to me. shit will still be working when you die cabron.

you rock. google images confirms it is of the FT family tree, making it very likely a 60's camera, maybe 70's but doubtful.

i can mount the lenses on my d80 just fine, one of them has a touch of mold but the rest are in good shape. not sure if any of them will work outside of full manual tho...

the flash is a little puzzling tho, it appears to not have any control over the output level and thus blows the shit out of any highlights. does anyone have any idea how i could control the power/outup level?

>does anyone have any idea how i could control the power/outup level?

Use aperture of the lens to control the amount of light. That's how it was done before variable-power flashes were invented.

I can almost get proper exposure on f22 at 1/250 with the exposure comp jacked way, way down... not sure how to squeeze any less out of it (see image)

also, i got this vintage kodak machine... any good?

Wait, wut? Where did the exposure compensation come from? You should be shooting in full manual mode with the shutter speed fixed somewhere between 1/30-1/200 (the shutter speed is usually irrelevant as long as it's slower than the max. flash sync speed - usually 1/160-1/250 for DSLRs). Also bear in mind that these flashes aren't supposed to be used for close subjects, so if you're trying to shoot some stuff on your desk, you'll get overexposure no matter how you try.

protip: you can still adjust exposure compensation in full manual... which funnily enough, is also the easiest mode to set 1/250th at f22...

which might be why I attached the exif...

Please tell me you're not really that retarded.

sorry, I'm still not follwing...

"Exposure compensation" is a correction applied to automatically metered exposure. Full manual mode has no automatically metered exposure by definition, so I have no idea what the fuck you are adjusting there.
>> Anonymous
exposure comp? If you're using a manual flash, your camera must also be on manual.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
Assuming that Nikkormat still has a working battery in it, the meter doesn't actually turn on until the frame-advance lever is pulled out a bit (not enough to advance the frame, just so it's not flush with the camera body).

I tell you this because it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure that out on mine. I assumed the meter was intermittently broken for months.

(If the Nikkormat doesn't have a working battery, http://www.criscam.com)

So exposure comp in full manual is a useless adjustment? That's a shame, I wonder why it's still available then. I assumed that it gave you a lighter/darker exposure without having to change your aperture/shutter.

Anyways, I'm getting acceptable results after the ISO revelation. Thanks very much ac for the link, I had no idea I'd need an adaptor for the battery in the FT.

Every camera I've used disables "exposure compensation" per se when in manual mode. Or, rather, whatever control was used to control EV comp is just used to control one of the settings.

E.g., on my 40D, the rear wheel is EV comp normally but turns into aperture control when I'm in Manual mode. The XTi only had one wheel, so EV comp was button+wheel, and in manual mode button+wheel controls aperture.

Turns out this beast is a Kodak Colorsnap 35 v1. A lot of the marking have worn off the softer metal dials, especially the marking on the top left dial. Should I slap a roll of film in it /p/?

>>303910
Looks like my Nikon was telling me fibs then. Cheers for the info, exp comp makes a little more sense now!

I *think* (I haven't touched the stuff since I thought the "P" on the mode dial of a Canon P&S meant "Photographs" and the "M" meant "Movies") it biases your meter, but I'm not sure.

If you look at David Alan Harvey's EXIF, at least on his D300 (can't remember for any of his other cameras), it's always set to -something, and it's usually in manual mode, often set to spot metering, which is consistent with how Harvey would always meter an area of highlight on his manual film cameras and use that.

Obviously. Unless you're dirt poor and film is a rare, rare treat for you to come across.

Pretty much any camera that comes my way, no matter how much effort it takes to get it to work, has at least a few pics taken on it.
>> sage rage !3I4SJbCh8M
>>303920
But I'm a complete noob when it comes to film... And the controls on this thing are a bit archaic and scary...

Fuck it, you're right, I'll go buy some rolls tomorrow... Any suggestions as to what film I should be buying to get the most love out of the Kodak and the Nikon without breaking the bank?

You will fucking love it, you lucky bastard you.
Sorry about your great grandfather of course..
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
Wait, what? The Nikkormat FTN has no way to set exposure compensation because it has no autoexposure modes. What exactly are you setting when you think you're setting exposure compensation?

He lived a full life of 98 years and was still living on his own in his own house til he passed. He would have loved /p/, he was definitely an old school /p/ervert.

Now I'm actually excited about loading these babies up... Will I need anything special as far as film for the FT? Also, there was a very old roll in the kodak which I took out and wrapped in black cardboard... I'm hoping there are a couple of shots that can be developed, but who knows what was taken on there?!

>>303936
You are most certainly correct. I'm talking about using the vintage flash unit on my Nikon D80 in full manual tho
>> Anonymous
I have a Nikkormat FT as well, it is a fantastic camera. I still can't figure out why they stopped putting the depth of field preview button on cameras, I love that thing.

>>303973
here again.

>>303947

You don't need special film, but I would recommend shooting a roll of Tri-x to get some real good classic black and white shots. Good luck finding someone who actually develops tri-x anymore without sending it out heh....
>> sunshine
>>303976
Yeah I'll attest to that, my store only develops C-41 without having to send out.

But still agreed, Tri-X!

I own a Nikkormat EL. Love the thing. My dad gave it to me. I'd kill for some of your lenses though. Dad only had a 50mm and a 135mm. So now I'm left looking for used lenses, and I'm having to go to many different shops because of the way the aperture is adjusted. Shitsux.
>> 303973
>>303982

Y'know that's another thing that I can't figure out why they changed. I much prefer changing the aperture on the lens instead of that shitty little wheel on the camera body.
>> Anonymous
>>303986
Yeah, this way is much better. And I have a feeling I'm going to be lost after I purchase a new digital body.

Quick question:
When I do eventually get a digital body, will I be able to adjust aperture when I use the lenses I already own [the ones for the Nikkormat]?
