okay, there are tricks with video that you can't do the same way in film (the way light will make an edge sharp even if the object itself is out of focus, which they did to great effect in 6 Feet Under).
there are multiple-focus split lenses which you can see a great example of in Wicker Park's intro when the guy is shopping the diamond ring.
Heroes does this stuff, though, where the camera doesn't seem to have any idea *where* it's focused, and it drives me crazy. mostly because they keep the DoF really tight and people miss their marks by a centimeter.
I started this thinking that one of those would answer it, but now that I look at the picture really closely, I can't think of an acceptable solution for why his cheek is in focus and the rest of his face isn't, unless it was simply exploiting video. that's not helpful, I know, but maybe someone more familiar with it will correct me.
