E-30 Anonymous
I was happy to hear about a new camera coming out of Olympus. If they've managed to get ISO 400 with less noise than my 510, I'll be sold. Although I might as well get a D300. >_>
Opinions, /p?

Either get the D300 or wait until Olympus rethinks the price for the E-30 (or begins giving out free grips/flashes with it like they did with the E-3).

As for noise, I wouldn't count on it. The D300 won't be that big of an improvement, too - if you want really clean pictures, get an used 5D.

It can get noticeable if you push the shadows. (Though it's the case with every non-FF camera, and you'll get noise even on FF if you go far enough)

Oh, that picture is from a D80, IIRC

There's your problem. You could've dropped to 800, 1/80th easily, or giving it another stop of exposure by going down to 1/80th and then correcting the exposure on the computer would've killed the abundance of noise in the shadows.

He could've eve dropped the ISO to 200 and got a clear shot at 1/20s since the scene is obviously pretty static and the E-510 has built-in IS.

This is also true; even without IS if his technique doesn't suck he should be able to pull a reasonably sharp 1/20th.

Anytime someone bitches about exposure, remind them that David Alan Harvey shot "Cuba" with just Velvia 50 at the rated ISO, with his fastest lens being f/1.4, and tell them to do the math for their set-up. Even a consumer digicam with an f/2.8 lens and a usable ISO 200 ties it. I'm sure he probably had a few fifth of a second or so exposures, but the point is those are manageable if you're good enough.

i'll shoot all day long at ISO1600 with any digital SLR in plain daylight, 0 noise, booyah

OP here. It's not that it's unbearable at ISO 400, it's just that it's a little too noticeable for my taste, especially in crops. And of course, after 400 it comes on pretty strong. But I wasn't trying to start a thread on noise, I was trying to get some opinions on the state of Olympus with the coming E-30.
Cherio.
