What was the PP in turning this into B&W then? Did you do it with in camera settings or did you use Photoshop? Details, plz.

Yeah, the lighting's really even, but that has a big advantage for portraits, IMO: it's not distracting. Art in general, and portraits especially, is supposed to draw out and present some of the essence of the subject. You're forced to look at the subject and not the lighting; it's the same idea behind putting portraits or street scenes in black and white, except with lighting instead of color.

Plus, the accutance of the lens is good enough to make it pop even with the plain lighting.

The emphasis is not on the lighting, but the fact that her skin tone matches the wall behind her too much. It looks weird. It's the same problem I usually see with converting portraits to black and white, the skin always end up weirdly translucent looking, and it's a pain in the ass getting various tones to differentiate properly. At least her lips stand out like they should, but it's weird how her face blends in with the wall. Perhaps a little cross-lighting, or just some different conversion, would help that.
Except for the skin tone thing, though, I quite like it, it's a very nice portrait.

You could try adjusting each channel individually for more control.

Yeah, that's what I do. It's still a pain to get it anywhere close to what I want. I've seen really good digital black and white, I just think it takes way too much effort, especially for portraits.
