soup /p/,
I'm kinda a lens noob, I've always just used the one my camera came with. Now, I'm getting a Nikon F3 Body for christmas and I was wondering if the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Standard lens would work with it, considering it's a new lens with an old camera.

You shouldn't have any trouble. It's not that old a camera. You'll have a lot of fun with it, I think.

I thought a lens for digital slrs cause vintage?

Vignetting, not vintage.

And the 'D' doesn't mean 'Digital'. The 1.5x-crop lenses intended for digital SLRs only are 'DX' lenses.

The D means distance information, it means that the lens is able to metre properly with CPU Nikons and has 3D Matrix metering.

The L means luxury, it means that the lens is better than everything else and has a red stripe.

The APO means Apospherical, a special kind of lens that gives you more accurate zoom than a regulor non-Apospherical lens.

More accurate zoom? Huh? Apospherical? The correct term is Aspherical.

It means it has at least one aspheric element in the optical formula, which is a special type of ground glass that is excellent at correcting for spherical aberration, distortion, flare, and ghosting. It's just a more modern, more expensive lens that will produce a crisper image.

I think there is some mixing of terms. Aspherical does not mean the element is a special kind of glass, it means that the curve of the element is not a segment of a sphere... hence a-spherical. They correct for spherical aberration.

An apochromatic element is made of special glass, often incorporating flourite or flint glasses. They correct for chromatic aberration.

Most high-performance modern lenses incorporate both aspherical and apochromatic elements.

Anyone mention fluoride elements yet?

God, can anyone on this board spell "fluorite" correctly?

Does anyone care other than you? No one cares about grammar Nazis and spelling Nazis. Go die in a fire. :)

Well, if you insist, you may have your lenses filled with flour and fluoride.

My lenses have fluoride in them already. :)
