Nikon D80.

+ nikkor 50mm f/1.4
or
+tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 +nikkor 50mm f/1.8(maybe, since it's el cheapo)

Can get these two options for about the same prices, somewhat tight budget.

That is the question.

Also, what's the most common filter diameter for nikon lenses?
>> Anonymous
Get the f/1.8 50mm. The f/1.4 is indeed a quicker lens, but stopped wide open everything becomes very soft. You won't be using it wide open very often, so just get the f/1.8 and save yourself some money.

I have the f/1.4, its fun but for a third of a stop the 1.8 is definitely a better deal.

The Tamron I use a hell of a lot more. I happen to have the 17-50 f/2.8.

There is no super common diameter, just find lenses you like and get them, then get filters for them.

if you notice the last one was taken with the 1.4...

i disagree that it becomes very sharp at f/1.4. i use it wide open a lot and i would rate it as "a little sharp", and dont forget it just means itll be sharper at f/1.8 than the 50mm f/1.8 wide open. i would say get the tamron and f/1.8 though since i dont really think the difference in price is worth the extra third stop. (i got my f/1.4 from my dad so i didnt have to pay for it $$)

its been sited many times and in tests that the nikon 1.8 is sharper than the 1.4 at in most instances.

I lol'd

that specific review seemed pretty much in-depth though
>> elf_man
His stuff varies depending on what he's reviewing, some of it's quite good, some of it's B-movie hilarious. But hey, he certainly makes you think about it...

he loves his cameras does our ken.i just love the amount of effort some ppl put into their website when their photography is so stuck and static.its like they have aal this equiptment and are stuck in the first year of a photography class.

i do love/hate ken rockwell. my favorite quote from him is this:

"f-stop, f-stop, f-stop....its all about the fucking f-stops." ken rockwell, 1995.
>> thefamilyman
i've owned both the 50mm f/1.8 and the f/1.4.
the f/1.4 is a far nicer built lens but on digital at f/1.4 its a tad soft on the boarders, but on film it seems fine. The f/1.8 provides unsurpassed performance for your dollar. ppl will alwalys say that the build quality is poor, but i pulled my one to pieces (because i broke it by dropping my camera from a height) and i can comfortably tell you that its built way better than ppl give it credit for, it will be one of the last things breaking on your camera.

thefamilyman's recommendation: Get the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 +nikkor 50mm f/1.8 combination (its also nice to have a wide zoom lens too)
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
If it means getting two lenses instead of of one, definitelygrab the 17-50 and 50 1.8

The Tamron is a good range and the 2.8 is nothing to sneeze.

I really hope this doesn't start another 1.4 vs 1.8 argument... it's almost as bad as any stupid flame war. Honestly.

OH make sure you sacrifice your first shot to /p/ :)

has this ever really happened? surely its just an argument about cost/what you want the lense for = usefulness. apples and oranges..etc

heres what ken rockwell had to say about this little ditty:

"only the big playas with the rims and the gumby gold should go for the 1.4...the rest of yo ghetto ass bitches pick up the 1.8, it costs less than yo crack" Ken Rockwell, 1997.

>>55395
Well, if he said it then.... OH WAIT A SECOND
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>55395

I've seen it happen, because it starts off as Bang for Yo buck argument, which i'm content with... but it usually then becomes

ONLY A FOOL WOULD SPEND THAT MUCH MORE MONEY ON THE 1.4D

blah blah blah... i just usually feel the insecurities from 1.8 owners... and as owner of both... it's well.. just plain stupid...

but i must stop for i fear i'm baiting other people to start this.
>> Anonymous
>>55402

lol yeah i dont think many are around tonight to bait.im sure the 1.8 owners would say that maybe its your insecurites for spending so much on a lense with a fraction difference in the apature setting.

"anyone dumb enuff to shell out all those bills for the 1.4 must be a SERIOUS PLAYA or all fucked up on PCP", Ken Rockwell, Memories of PLAYA, 1987.

Most common filter Diameter's are 52mm and 77mm
So get either one of those, and step up rings for the odd ones.

Also the f1.4 is basically 3/4 of a stop faster, So its totally worth it if you NEED that light, But otherwise if your just a sharp junkie and shoot all your pics in the daytime or with a flash, You won't really notice much of a difference.

Though for the price of the 50mm f1.4 i would get the Sigma 30mm f1.4 instead.

The Sigma is a great lens, i borrow it from a friend from time to time

I guess this is the time to ask:

Who exactly -is- Rockwell and why does everyone hate him?

I've read three articles of his, and they all seemed reasonable enough.
>> Anonymous
>>55469
Some people do hate him, but I am indifferent to him. He's not really different from any other photographer if you go through his articles very carefully. He harbors some predujices here and there and isn't afraid to express himself. Just realize that he doesn't really state fact so much as opinion backed by experience.

I'm find myself on his site every once in a while for a review or two on equipment. Other than that, I really haven't spent too much time combing through his stuff too much.
>> Anonymous
Good reviews are objective, ken's stuff is highly subjective. That means you can't just take everything he says as The Truth & Only Truth. You need to think yourself too.

I find ken's reviews pretty nice. He actually tells stuff what matters to amateurs, like is the product worth it, is it easy&comfortable to use, does it work in -20 Celsius, build quality etc.

Other pages have loads of graphs, marketing speech etc. They don't get to the point.

I kinda like Ken Rockwell. My main problem with him is that he wants his motto "the camera doesn't matter" to be true way too hard.
