Sup /p/,

I'm really tired of using my S6500fd. I want something more advanced, I want to grow as a photographer. Since I'm really poor being a university student and all, I'm looking for a cheap DSLR. So where is a better place to ask for advice, but here?

I've narrowed my shortlist to the following models:
1. Nikon D50
2. Nikon D70(s)
3. Sony A100
4. EOS 10D

As you can see, they're not exactly cutting edge anymore, but they're fairly cheap and have basically all you need as a hobbyist. As of now I'm really leaning towards the D70s because it looks good, have the best price and a sturdy body.

What does /p/ think?

The Canon EOS20 supports EF-S lenses (for digital sensor only), unlike the EOS10. The third party ones made for crop sensors still work though.

D50 is the shiznit, I would recommend that It has better high ISO performance than the D70s, only thing you really lose is the Commander mode the D70 has (which you need a speedlight for anyway)

You mean the EOS 20d? Sorry but the 20d is above my limit in money.

EOS 10D? How much do those go for now? I think you're better off looking at an XTi instead; more options with that.

Also, consider the Pentax K100 or K10 as well.

A 10D is far from cheap lol

I'm a Canonfag and I'm going to agree with everyone else telling you not to get the EOS 10D. Crop sensor without the ability to use EF-S lenses = Fail.

You might want to consider the Digital Rebel XT or XTi, though.

The A100 is way below the other cameras you listed, if you are interested in the sonyminolta range wait for the A700 to turn up instead or look at a 7D.

Dont get the A100 now (lol i cant belive im saying this)

Go for a Nikon D40. Lighter, cheaper, bigger screen, higher ISO, compatible with all Nikon lenses, easier to use, and overall more fun.
>> Anonymous
>>83734compatible with all Nikon lenses

lol

Everything except the ones that require mirror lockup will mount on the d40, so in that way it's the most compatible nikon since the F4. :P

Why's the A100 below the rest? I've read just about every online review there is about it and it's gotten really good results. The sensor's the same as the super-expensive D200, it's got Steadyshot and anti-dust features, and cheaper than Nikon/Canon equivalents. What's not to like about it?
>>83734
Lol D40, a fucking joke from my experiences with it. I don't need a big screen (you're supposed to see the photos on a PC, not the camera), I want a big camera that fits my hands and won't break for anything, not to mention it needs the new gen-lenses, or else the AF won't work. And most of all: all the trendy emo-kids with middle-class parents have one and run around taking photos of their fucked up friends like it's some kind of toy. So no thanks, I'll never even consider that camera.

K100/10d might be something worth looking into. Although right now, D50 or A100 feels like it's the way to go.

uh, the D50 was the D40 of the nikon family until the D40 came out. they're both aimed squarely at the consumer, and don't kid yourself otherwise.

Yes, the D50 was designed as an more affordable consumer camera than the Digital Rebel/D70, but the D40 is an even greater departure from the D100 design than the D50.
>> Jeremo
I can't speak for the models aside from the nikon family and perhaps the A-100...

I would recommend the D70s over the D50, purely for the Commander mode for the CLS system and the front dial as well as the commander. The twin dials make it really easy for me as i shot mostly in Manual and sometimes Aperture priority.

Whilst the D70s doesnt have great high iso performance, if used correctly the grain can definitely work for the benefit of a shot and there is always post processing.

Those are the reasons why i chose it over the D50, if you don't need those things which i take for granted, grab the D50. Still a great camera, the ergonomics of the nikon models are second to none.

The Sony A-100... yeah... i just held the camera for a while and felt it weird, the placement of the shutter button just seemed poorly designed.

Fuck Sony. Anyone who even thinks about getting a Sony camera over Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus etc is a fucking moron.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

Except I'm more concerned about wasting a ton of money if it turns out that I have no talent at all, so buying a low-end DSLR is a safer bet than going all out and finding out that I wasted several thousand dollars. It's all about money, though...

The Pentax K10D is cheap, consider that as an option.

>>83941
not that impressive, but miles better than the sony

>>83942

If I was to get a DSLR and I was just starting out, I would get the K10D. The lenses Pentax make are rather good and cheap too. Since I already have Nikon glass, its kinda pointless. At the moment the pricess on the mid range DSLR's are heading downwards. New models are coming out and I am sure there will be tons of secondhand stock around at cheap pricess.

Below the ones he listed, the A100 compares to a D80, not that i have a clue where that stands with the other ones. fucking naming conventions in photography are shit.

People who hate the sony dont have any reason, if you dont like the shutter button fine, your hands are malformed, my small hands fit the A100 perfectly.

A700 is 300D comparable.

Oh, can you prove something? go find a D80 otherwise stfu.

>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s

Ill get defensive when some idiot who has no idea of what the A100 compares to trashes it because its SONY.

I know i do troll it a bit too but not any more than the canon/nikonfags gloat about their shit.

>>83990
really?

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with any of the cameras listed. I have a Sony A100, works well and I like the features.

If you're serious about photography then heres what you NEED to do. Go to a camera shop and try the models out, see how they feel in your hand, how do the buttons feel, weight of the camera, etc. basically find one that fits your hand and you feel comfortable with holding for long periods of time.

Next, check out the accessories for the camera, the worst thing is to buy a camera and then have to purchase the extras (lenses and flashes) only to realize they cost an arm and a leg compared to another brand. ( Sony is horrible for that, most of their flahes are ridiculously overpriced imo and they are literally rebaged Minolta flashes. same with lenses)

One other note too is Used lenses and 3rd party support. Canon and Nikon have extremely large followings and finding a cheap used lenses or 3rd party lenses are very easy, just hop on craiglist and you'll find hundreds of listings.

Good luck with your purchase tho, honestly any camera is good, but just pick one that you're comfortable with.

I have a Nikon D70s, and while I wasn't 100% happy with it at first (white balance issues), I'm beginning to get used to it and am starting to be able to get the results I want. I also had a few old Nikon lenses, which was a plus.

Sony flashes cost just as much as the minolta flashes did/do, its not that much overpricing tbh.

Besides you could just get an older minolta digital flash for less.

2nd hand lenses are findable for all systems, but the sonyminolta mount is harder to find quality for.

i'm a college student too, and sadly, i saw the nikon d200 in action...
and could only afford the d40 i have now. ;.;
it's not a bad camera, but i've yet to get into any of the bigtime photography courses here.
i've heard that the sony camera is crap, and only an option if you have a lot of minolta lenses, if that helps any...
i feel so noobish here... >.>
>> Anonymous
>>84227
Do the Alphas still use Minolta's annoying nonstandard hot shoe for flashes?
>> Anonymous
I don't think any of them are terrible, just some brands have models that are particularly good for some purposes with the right body + lens combination. Some people are more comfortable with the quirks and systems of each too.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>84248
yup, the A100 is JUST a 5D with some sony touches everything from minoltas digital gear works fine on it (older film flashes dont but they didnt work on the 5D or 7D either)

>>84473
I just got to feel the A700 instore today as it appears to have finally COME OUT.

DO VERY FUCKING WANT.
