My friend wants me to take pictures of her next week. I haven't done any real portrait photography before and was wondering if /p/ had any tips/hints/DIY gadgets to help.

I'll be shooting with a Nikon d50, 50mm f/1.8 and 70-300 f/4.5 nikkor lenses and a Nikon SB25 flash.

Parchment paper, white poster board and aluminum foil. Another flash would be nice, but I have no idea what type of portrait shots you're going to do (indoors, outdoors, close ups, etc). The rest is all up to you now.

Also, post processing is your friend.

Don't shoot the person looking into the sun like this. Squinty eyes are not your friend.

A week away probably isn't enough time, but in the future, you might want to look into buying some equipment to get your flash off-camera. Full-frontal flash is rarely what you want, but a flash from a different angle can be awesome (google 'strobist').

OP here, I do have the cactus V2 wireless system for my flash. I will be indoors, probably against either a white or white with black flecked wall.
whats with the parchment paper?

Probably to use as a soft-light reflector.

Also: PovertyWizards for the win.
