Sony Develops 35mm full size CMOS Image Sensor with 24.81 Effective Mega pixel resolution and extremely high signal conversion speed for use in Digital SLR Cameras
-------------------------------------------------

How fuckin interesting...

definitely waiting for the next FX camera now... with another 35mm sensor... hmmm interesing indeed

Also i wonder how different this is to the D3 sensor.

yeah it pretty much also means that the next Nikon FX camera is going to take a long while too.

It's almost guaranteed something similar is going to end up in a Nikon body.

Now i'm just wondering what Pentax + the 4/3 crowd are thinking at this point.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
Nikon just upped their production of their FX body by a good whack recently. I think they know they have a hit on their hands.

I wouldn't expect Sony to rush out with a camera body for this sensor. I still think they are planning to slip this in once the line is matured. Work their way up from the budget to semi-pro to pro lines as they add more to their system.

yeah definitley agree with that. Sony would be smart enough to know the pros won't switch to them just cause they have a new sensor. It's going to take a lot more time for them to establish themselves.

Again... I wonder what Olympus and 4/3 are thinking... could this even mean the beginning of the end for them?
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ

I suppose the future of that system depends on how far ahead the others can get and how far behind Olympus will lag in turn. If they can keep up with a reasonable parity then they should be able to coast along as they have for a while at least.

They might take advantage of having the smallest and therefore cheapest to build sensors. Sell DSLRs with lots of features like good weather sealing and nice performance at a cheaper price. No way for me to know. I'm just guessing, but I'd expect they'll have teams working overtime on this long before Sony made the announcement everyone predicted. They're not going to let on until they have to.

I'd be saddened to see the 4/3 system and Olympus go under.

The problem with full-frame sensors isn't just development. Such large pieces of silicon are quite expensive since you can fit a rather small quantity of them on a standard 200 or 300mm wafer and the probability of the piece being defective is proportional to its size. So unless there's some breakthrough in the manufacturing process, large sensors will continue to be expensive even if everyone starts making them.

And speaking of Olympus, they already established themselves in two niches that don't demand larger sensors - pros who need long and light telephotos and beginners who won't be able to afford a full-frame camera anyway.

It doesn't really matter what the pros do, since bulk of the DSLR marketshare is in low to mid range cameras, and with rich amateurs making up most of the high-end camera market.
>> Warren !WSxruxpIJs
FWIW, this chip is likely destined to be in the Nikon D3x.

" It would seem the D3x is well along in development as it appears Thomas D. Mangelsen may be using the D3x currently. I was at one of his gallery stores and I asked about his camera equipment and she mentioned the D3x. I said you mean the D3? Nope, D3x. "

If this is true, we might see a mid-year release of the D3x, and Canon subsequently shitting their collective pants as Nikon gets back into the thick of it.

I cant be the only person on /p/ that loves photography but fucking detests all this shit to do with sensors and such.

i know its important to understand current camera technology to an extent but it feels like most of you are waiting for something that will never happen.

This is quite important news for Sony/Nikon users, its going to bring new bodies that will provide a LOT.

PROTIP: 99% people on any photography forum are into cameras more than into photography.
And the same is with all other specialized forums, just look at /o/.

>Except that it wont.
Better sensors == Better image quality. It's just like people discussing different films in the film days.

>It seems like the majority of you aren't really into photography. You're into the cameras.
This has been true about photography since Niepce and Daguerre. If you're just now figuring that out, you need to lurk the fuck moar.

I feel pretty secure as someone who is more interested in photos than gear. I risked life, limb, and SLR today fighting against wind on a slippery surface to get some pictures, and I always try to bump photo threads over gear threads. But that's not going to stop me lusting after the newest Canon gear.

I think all the sensor talk is pretty useless, too.

It's important to understand the technical side, but "gear threads" don't have much to do with that. Though I'm not even sure if Cartier-Bresson knew how to process film; he had some trusted darkroom guy who did all his developing and printing for him.

And 25 megapixels? FFS, twelve is enough for anyone who isn't trying to shoot sports with an ultrawide and crop. Keep that stuff for MF backs.

This adds a full-frame sensor for Sony users, but the extra dynamic range is compromised by the huge pixel count. Nikon users don't gain a single thing, even if they do wind up using this chip; they've got the D3.

Hmm, column amplifiers, 6.3 fps, huge size. I guess this thing will throw away at least 2.5 bits in the necessary correction algorithms. I sincerly hope for a better performance though.

but how can you go printan hueg postarz without 25 megapixels?

every self-respecting photographer has to print hueg postarz!

yeah and digital camera tech is even more lulzy for crippleware as they just keep feeding a few more mps ever few months when they have had much better tech for years.

i dont think we are going to see a plateau for a long long time. the cameras in 15 years are going to be great. its just a shame ill probably be dead by then.

>thats the most important thing? this sharpness/ size /mp counting wont produce better images where it counts. content.
Never said it was the most important thing. I just said it was a thing. A bigger sensor gives me more control over depth of field. A bigger sensor gives me less noise at high ISO, and the ability to use higher ISOs than my APS-C sensor's capable of. I can capture pictures with my SLR that just flat out aren't possible with my P&S because I can slap on an f/1.8 lens and bump the ISO to 1600. If I could bump the ISO to 3200 or 6400, that would expand my options even more. And if those higher ISOs were clearer than the 400 I normally keep my camera at, well that's even better.

Without my SLR, I could still go out and take good pictures with my P&S or one of my film cameras or even my cell phone (although that's stretching it a bit). I just couldn't take all of the same pictures that the SLR lets me. A full-frame camera with its massive high-ISO ability would open up even more possibilities.

I get--and totally agree with--the argument that the quality of the picture has more to do with the ability of the photographer to find and compose good shots. I'm just saying, better technical quality can make the shots even better. I want to have my cake and eat it too.

About time! Now I can use that 11-18 in all its wide glory!

About time! soon we'll get a proper wide 11-18 in all its glory

You're making critical qualitative judgments on a sensor that's not even released yet.

What would you know about the DR capability of the sensor?

Don't tell people that gear threads are useless then go about discussing it yourself.

Hypocrite.

>>119691

there's a 11-18 that's for FF??
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s

its FF from 13+

not bad huh?

The Tamron 11-18? Didn't rockwell test it and say the vignetting only dissapeared at 14mm?
Not that it matters if you want truly wide angle Sigma makes a 12-24mm Rectilinear lens aswell. I almost traded my 10-20 for one!
