I just cleaned the mirror in my Nikon D80 with my breath and a dust cloth. Now it looks horrific through the lens.

Am i a cretin? will it be scratched to hell?

And finally how much will they charge me if i did fuck it up?

WHY WOULD YOU DO SUCH A THING?

It's probably not scratched to hell (might be, those are often first-surface mirrors - ie the micrometer-thin aluminum is on the upper face). More likely that oils from your skin are on the cloth and then got on the mirror.

Clean it again with reagent-grade methanol and a lint-free disposable optical cloth. See if that helps.

Sounds like a plan, It has ONE pixel missing on the LCD too, so i think im going to send it to my local nikon techs to get it straightened out. I forsee charges for the cleaning mind...
