Sup, /p/.

I am noob at photography and would like to learn something, but I don't have a camera. So far, I am leaning to D40, because it is the cheapest DSLR. But maybe I should get point-and-shit? I'll photograph mostly landscapes, abandoned houses and other things. And one question to people with glasses: are you comfortable with them using optical viewfinder?

TL;DR D40 or point-and-shit?
>> Anonymous
P&S, even a D40 will be a waste.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
P&S.

If you get the D40 and then decide you're not that into photography, you're out a few hundred extra dollars.

If you get the D40 and then decide you *are* really into photography, you'll be annoyed when you realize all of the cool lenses the D40 can't autofocus with.

The other way is to just dive in, with the expectation of upgrading in a couple years, in which case *unless you know you will be shooting a lot inside in low light* (clubs, concerts, etc.)the d40 is good to start.
>> Anonymous
>>174088
Get a rebel xt, ALL canons eos lenses will autofocus on it and you have a larger upgrade path.

>>174088
Film is always an option too, you wouldn't be dropping tons of money, more than likely be able to get cheaper lenses, and could find out whether you actually like photography or not.

You'd have to be retarded to buy a D40 when you could get a Rebel instead.

Comfortable enough. It's not awesome, but you get used to it quickly.

This person is a noob, so no piles of glass.
This person is a noob, so ergonomics (of which there is little difference and I use Nikon, Canon and sometimes SONY(!!!) often) don't matter a damn
Nikons are not cheaper.
This person is a noob, so that idea is irrelevant.

Basically, there is no good reason for a noob to choose the inferior Nikon D40 when they could have the superior Rebel.

>And one question to people with glasses: are you comfortable with them using optical viewfinder?
Not on my 400D, no. I routinely produce mis-aligned photos due to only seeing one side or corner at a time. I can make the whole rectangle visible, but often an awkward angle, light, wanting to see viewfinder display or whatever, throws it off.
>> Anonymous
Noob needs the best body and lens he or she can afford to grown on. Best determined by sheer subjective preference.
Noob shouldn't have to reinvest on something later on.

However, if Noob does get a Nikon entry-level camera, Noob should get the D50 used.

OP here. I've found a good deal (if the person still has it though) for 350D, but don't like its 1.8" screen and necessity to press SET whenever you change settings. However, I do like its DOF feature. And film isn't an option, at least, not for now, because I like to take shitload of pictures; I am not considering buying lenses, maybe later. And if I don't like it, there is always reselling. About the cost here: cheapest D40 is 648$, 350D is 1170$ so yeah. I don't really like D50 and you couldn't really find it here, other DSLR's are out of my bugdet.

P.S. Picture related, I'll go there someday to take photos, another hand would be useful too.

I'm an E-500 owner and I'd advise against that. Even in the 4/3 system it's better to get an E-300 if you want something for super cheap, or add a hundred more to get the superior E-330 or E-510.

E-500 was decent 3 years ago when it was cheaper than a Rebel XT despite having two lenses instead of one. Now it's just a functional, but old and noisy camera with a crappy viewfinder, and the 14-45 lens sucks compared to the 14-42 bundled with newer models.

Check into Pentax...new k100d can be had for around $400, which will leave you money for more than just kit lenses, and unless you plan on blowing your pictures up huge the megapixel difference doesnt matter

Stary the fuck away from D40. There's no support for older lenses.

Pentax K100d Super is cheap as shit and handily destroys comparable cameras from other manufacturers, especially sony, olympus (and their shitty 4/3 sensors) and the lowend EOS series.

The D40 is for suckers. The D40x was for bigger suckers. And the D60 is for the all the straggling suckers that Nikon couldn't catch the first time around with the D40X. You're looking into Nikon, ignore everything below the D80, save for the discontinued D50 and D70 models. Those are still nice even used.
>> Anonymous
>>176386

lol nice cultured response there. I agree with the d80 but the D50 and D70 are really outdated. i wouldnt buy a dlsr that old as you dont really know how well its been treated or how long its got left b4 its fucked. the D40 isnt a bad camera by any means.

>>174121

ac, if he decides hes not into photography than whatever dslr he buys will still probably be a lot fucking better than a point and shoot. Also i cant see many people getting any enrty level dslr and then thinking that they want to go out and buy a $1000+ lens.

i have a D300 and i still wouldn't sink that much money into lenses as there is a lot of other equipment that will improve my photography b4 i go blow a wad on another length of glass. Eg lighting.

300 is plenty. I sold my *ist DL with lens for 350 1 year ago, with just over 1000 exposures.

Seriously, get a newer Camera

K100D Super and Either the kit lens or the FA50mm f/1.4 are a much better choice, even if they'll run nearly double that put together.

The FA50 is a lens you'll keep till you die. Trust me.

The k100 has
-Much better viewfinder (brightest short of a pentaprism)
-the same exact sensor as the D50,
-only with cleaner high iso pics and
-IN CAMERA STABILIZATION THAT'S GOOD TO 1/4sec in my shaky hands at 50mm.

It's just a much better camera.... oh, and it uses AA (Nimh, or alkaline), CRV3 Lithium, or RCRV3 lithium batteries.

Do i need to post pics to convince you people how great this combo is? Great color, great sharpness, low noise, excellent ergonomics.

If you want something cheap as shit, 300 for a basically new D50 with a lens is a good deal. I'd be tempted to pick it up just to lug around to places where i wouldn't bring my pentax and the much better glass. Just be aware it's unstabilized and the lens is pretty shitty compared to other 18-55s.
