Best Black and White?

This is Mine. Sorry, I dont know the specs of my camera off hand...I am still new into Photography.
Does /p/ think I am decent at this? Or should I just give up?
>> Anonymous
tilt is distracting
contrast is good, but the blacks are too black (it looks over exposed)
non interesting comp and subject matter
don't give up, learn first. It's a trial and error thing but knowing rules of composition ect. will help you.

yea, honestly if you took it straight instead of tilted it might have been a great shot, nice work

The tilt suggests the inebriated's view of the subject.

Since we're on the subject of black and white photos, I've wondered, is there a way to determine if black and white is better on a shot then going in full color, or is it just a trial and error kind of thing?

Yes, it is a somewhat complex procedure though:
1. Take picture in full color
2. Convert to B&W.
3. Look at both. See which one looks better.
4. Pick the version you decided looked better in step 3.

Black & White is all about contrast, and shadows and the play of light. Color is about, well, color. If a shot doesn't have anything interesting going on, color-wise, consider making it black and white.

I still find it funny, the "how does I make photo B&W?" Or rather, the whole idea of shooting for BOTH color and b&w at the same time. It's kind of nice to shoot an entire roll of tri-x with the B&W mindset going into it. Frankly I wish the D50 had a desaturated shooting mode.

Lately I've been using very soft colours, almost like a colour cast, but retaining a tiny bit of the original colour. It's working pretty well for me.. I'm developing a new style which is heavily manipulated in photoshop CS3 - either the contrast, or extreme colour shifts, etc. Not sure whether that's a good thing or not..
