D40 is a poor investment if you want to pursue such a career.
Either look at a D80 or look at another brand.
A Canon XTi has the feature you mentioned and will serve you very, very well.
About the 18-55. Yes, for either brand, you'll probably want a better lens soon as the kit lenses for either brand aren't too good optically, they're moderately slow (not very good for low light photography), have rotating front elements (which translates to a pain in the ass when using polarizer or a directional filter) and a variable aperture.
Before someone says that the Nikon 18-55 is better than Canon's 18-55, let me say: dont decide on your system path because one brand's 90-dollar piece of shit is slightly better than the other's 90-dollar piece of shit.
Regardless of the brand, you might want to try playing with a cheap 50mm F1.8 in addition to the kit lens. It's an excellent investment for either brand.
