I've been digging around in my 450D and 430EX manual trying to figure out something. Whenever I hold down the DOF preview button on the camera the 430EX strobes the flash continuosly. My question is why? What is it for? It is strobing because in flash mode it needs the light in order to show the DOF? I am guessing though.

1:1 and max zoom in a dark room, directly in someone's face, is amazing

Agreed, it's fun watching people blink a thousand times and tell you they see a box that changes color over time.

not as amazing as shooting it in your mouth and take a picture of it with a D3

>> DOF preview button Jacob
Your flash does that to give an accurate depth-of-field preview. When you use the DOF preview button, it also simulates the exposure. While your flash is on, it lights it so you can see the approximate exposure.

My D80/SB-800 does it too (optionally). Its a modeling light. You can see where the shadows fall just like a real studio light.

OP, you can disable it if you want to. It's in the flash's Custom Function.
