Primes have the advantage of having a wider aperture and better image quality vs. zooms.
Since primes don't have to change the focal length, they don't have to compromise sharpness to focal length. But yeah, the biggest difference is, like 28994 said, that with wider aperture, you get much more shallow DOF, which is better for portaiture, and you can photograph in much more low-lit conditions than with the zoom counterparts. I don't know about Nikkor lenses though, but 300 USD for a 50mm f/1.4 sounds like a fair deal to me.
