Halp /p/!

I've a nikon coolpix 4600 with a lens problem. It won't retract, or focus on anything. Yeah, it's probably an old peice of crap, but I don't have the money for a new digital camera. Being a broke college kid sucks big hairy balls.

Took it to a place that sold cameras, and they said that while they didn't do any repairs, it sounded like I probably had a bit of dust stuck in there.

Do I try to take it apart or no?

If I DO take it apart, what should I be looking for?

I've never taken apart a camera before, and to be honest, my knowlege about the inner workings of these things are next to nil.

Don't take it apart. If your Nikon has a lens problem, send it to the nearest Nikon service center (or ask a camera shop if they can send it). If the price quoted is too high for you, or you don't want it anymore go and get something else.

You can get a pretty good P&S digicam for under $100. Go around campus and (even in the summer) there are credit card companies out there offering a t-shirt or frisbee to college kids to get them to sign up for a credit card. Use said credit card to finance your camera for all of $10 per month for a year or so (don't forget you'd have to pay obscene interest rates, too!) or, better yet, get a part-time job and save up and don't waste money on pizza or beer.
