I just use extension tubes and my 50mm f/1.8. It cost $150 as opposed to $600+ for a decent macro lens.

Yes, i do macro. I went a couple of years with a canon 100mm f/2.8 macro, but now i own a mp-e 65mm + mt-24ex.

I use my macro bellows, that cost me 40$ as oppose to extension tubes for 150$ while giving me more flexibility than with extension tubes.

I use my 100mm fully manual Macro-Takumar, which cost $120 and is not only a great macro lens, but also a razor-sharp portrait lens, and doesn't produce an equivalent maximum aperture of f/11.

How far away do you have to be from the subject with the Mp-e 65mm?

I own that lens. Best portrait lens ever, and with amazing bokeh.

What's a good, but cheap, macro lens? My budget isn't exactly gigantic.

Best portrait lens ever is the Super-Takumar 105/2.8 (on 35mm or full-frame that is). It blows my mind.

For 1:1 lifesize the wd (working distance) is 101 millimeters. On 5:1 it's something like 41 millimeters. That shot i posted was around 4:1
