buy a new camera and you have to ask "what now?" go learn something about the camera you just bought. go learn about photography. its not hard. google is your friend. go out and take pictures since that is why you bought the camera, right? you dont even know what to do now that you have the camera and already looking to buy a new lens?

I want to do alot of photography at concerts/clubs/raves. I've heard debate over the 1.4 vs 1.8 , anyway, thanks for the advice, hopefully I can contribute a bit here after i learn what the hell I'm doing.....

The only big difference between the f1.8 and the f1.4 besides an extra quater of a stop is the build quality and autofocusing speed. Otherwise both lenses have the same image quality.

It is 2/3 of a stop. Not a quarter.

Absolutely not. They're two different lenses; the only thing they have in common is the 50mm focal length and the EOS mount. Both are very good lenses, but they are not the same.

The 50/1.4 has seven elements in six groups and an eight-bladed aperture; the 50/1.8 has six elements in five and a five-bladed aperture.

OP here, good info here, I'm thinking I might just save up for the 50mm 1.4, my friend used it on his rebel xt the other night at an event alongside a 520ex flash (i think), anyway here are the pics if you want to check them out. http://www.hardchat.net/delight2007/

The Canon 50mm f1.8 is really nice if you're looking for a fast inexpensive prime. I bought it because my family and friends hate being flashed. If you set the ISO to 800 it's fast enough in low light you won't need a flash.

Also, memory serving, the elements in the f/1.8 are molded while the elements in the f/1.4 are ground. The quality will be more consistent in the f/1.4 while the f/1.8 is a bit of a crapshoot.

The "bad" f/1.8's won't really be bad, you'll just see some f/1.8's that are a little sharper.
