You have much to learn padawan. But however, the /p/ can answer most questions.

M means Manual... just in case you didn't figure that out.
>> Anonymous
out of focus, underexposed. try again, it's free.
>> Anonymous
Also, when in manual, it helps to have read said manual. Learn the terms, how each affects each other.

This feels like a repost repost, and it is, but it's troof.

Feel lucky you can afford a DSLR, some like me are stuck with superzooms and left to drool at all the cool kids with D40's and Rebels.
>> notaphotograph
I think it s a good shot for a first photo in M mode..
my first photo was in M mode too and it was just a black screen..
but all I did was turning on the camera on M mode and shoot.
however I would't have bought a D40 for a first camera... I m just training with my 6500fd to see if buying a real camera would serve me or not.

I kinda envy you... cause I have to stick with my s3is...
but at the same time I wanna FUCKING KILL YOU, for taking such a crappy underexposed blurry fucking pic in your DSLR

protip:
1.put up a bigger aperture, maybe the maximum you can go with (don't know what lens you have there) that it's the F number thing you have on your camera
2.If you are taking the picture barehanded (holding the camera) put the shutter speed around 1/60 not a whole fucking second like you did
3.Set up some lightning, or if you can't, get your camera to be firm somewhere and get your shutter speed up for not underexpose
4.FOCUS on your fucking headphone for christ sake
5.Take Picture
6.???
7.Profit!

what's wrong with your s3is? Besides noise.

So, 18-55 f/3.5-5.6

>>EXIF
>F-Number f/5.6
He was already at his widest.

You should also up your ISO. The D40 can handle ISO400 no problem.

I'll field this one, even though I'm not him.

IT'S NOT F-ING SLR THATS WHATS WRONG.

I don't think people should be allowed SLR's as first cameras... Then again, the more that buy them, the lower the price drops and the more likely I am to own one.

ac?
what's going on?
maybe bigger aperture was a wrong term but
isn't f/3.5 bigger than f/5.6?
I always thought it was...
bigger aperture, more dof, more light captured etc etc
>> Anonymous
it's f/3.5 at the widest focal length, 5.6 at the longest. The OP shot the photo at the longest focal length, so it's 5.6.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

What>>70575said.

He was shooting at the 55mm end, where the max aperture is f/5.6

That's a good thing. They should be saying "Wow, your pics look really nice. You must be a good photographer."

(This may have been the point of your post. It wasn't entirely clear)

lol thats what i'm trying to say they usually attribute my pics to the fact that i have a good camera (not that my camera doesnt help) instead of the fact that i'm a decent photog -_-;

wow..

way to make a $500+ purchase and not know shit about it. You're no better than those stupid, rich texans who buy top of the line ski or snowboard gear, then just fall down the mountain all day.

iv actually been saving up or it for several months and reading up on photography so i wont be completely useless.

i know all the theory behind photography, but ill need practice to get it right. and to learn how to use my camera.

here, i took more photos. the big problem is the motion blur i get in most of my shots cuz i cant hold the camera steady for shit. im not quite understanding the exposure compensation tho...

another. this is when i started realising why the lens can make a big difference - cant get that nice shallow depth of field that's in professional photographs with my lens.

Protip- it's a big world. Go out there instead of taking pictures of shit on your desk.

While you're out there, bring a friend a long who's experienced with photography. Ask him or her to "coach" you along as you're taking pictures. This way you can have "noob" mistakes pointed out to you right away and avoid repeating them in the future.

i dont know any pro photographers personally but i will ask around...

i am gonna gear up for an outdoors shooting spree this weekend. :D will keep /p/ posted.

You really need to go outside to learn to shoot photographs first. Daylight and cameras tend to get along better than cameras with indoor lighting or no lighting indoors. Indoor lighting usually isn't bright enough for the camera, and the only way you can get a halfway decent picture is by opening the aperture all the way up. (By the way, the smaller the number on the aperture, the more light you're allowing through the lens.) The only way I've had relatively good success with an SLR (I've never used a DSLR) indoors is by setting up something to shoot right beside a really large window when the most light is filtering through it. My experience with digital cameras has led me to believe that digital cameras are even more picky about light sources.

When you do start going outside to attempt to take good photos, look for imagery with high contrast. This can include anything from harsh light and shadow to photographing a white house against a row of trees. I would suggest using the auto function and taking notes on what the suggested aperture, focus, and whatever else a Nikon D40 tells you about the pictures. Auto is something people who know what they're doing tend to shy away from, but it's a good learning tool. The major downside of the auto function in any SLR is that the camera likes trying to turn the picture into a mid grey instead of the high contrast image you see before you.

Your camera should have a setting called AV (aperture value) use that mode set lens at its widest angle and set the f-stop to its lowest. Bam you got some nice shallow depth of field. especially, better than mine anyway lol which caps a f/4.
