Vivitar 285HV + Quantaray Q15. The 285 is a good flash, usually sits on a lighting stand with an umbrella reflector. The Q15 is a POS I bought for $15 because I needed cheap secondary light and my requirements for it were pretty much "Not expensive". One of these days, I'll get another 285 for my secondary light.

The 285's on a Cactus PT04 wireless flash sync, and the Q15's on a Wein "Peanut" flash slave to go off when the 285 does.

I've been reading the Strobist blog. I highly recommend it.

Hell yeah a set up of three of these can give you stunning results. Plus visualising the lighting is drop dead easy compared to a strobe setup. The only drawback is portability :(

plus, they generate a lot of heat, and they're tricky to gel, and even trickier to diffuse/gobo/control. but you can sync at any speed with a worklight! and easily the best bang for the buck if you want the wattage. 60 or 70 bucks can easily get you 2000+ watts.

nah you don't even want to diffuse this shit you want striking directional lighting

So, where do I get those?

Don't compare watts with a strobes watt-seconds like that unless you generally use 1s shutter times.
