So, I shot this during a storm earlier this week. Wtf happened? Is that lightning bolt really that big or is it just incredibly over exposed? Also, any tips for shooting in these conditions would be appreciated.

I'm an Ohiofag, too. Pretty damn sick of these storms, but I'm hoping I can get some fucking lightning pictures eventually. No luck yet.

Looks to me like that just overexposed in that spot. I'm wondering if you added that grey around the bolt or not, too, because I don't really know what that is.

I would stop your lens down to something like f/15 or something in that range next time. Lightning is plenty bright enough to expose properly at that aperture. Also, use ISO 100 all the time, and try to do the longest exposure possible(5 seconds or more is usually good)

I'm not sure what the gray is around the lightning either. The only thing I did to the shot was take it from RAW to photoshop cs3 and adjusted the exposure down a bit.
This is closer to what the original looked like. Thanks for the tip, I'll try stopping down a bit more next time.

looks to me like the raw file was so overexposed in that area that there were simply no information/color left there.

1 Tripod

3 put camera in "bulb" mode
4 use a small aperture
5 put something dark in front of lens (ie black tagboard)
6 open the shutter
7 see lightning
8 take cardboard off lens
9 dont' see lightning
10 put cardboard on lens
11 repeat steps 7-10
12 ???
13 profit
