Canon Powershot S5 IS Anonymous
Do digital cameras have a limit as to what SD card size they can use? I was thinking about buying a "Canon Powershot S5 IS", and stuff a 4gb even 8gb sd card in it.

No limit.

Theoretically the limits imposed are related to whether the camera can use SD cards or SDHC (High Capacity).

The difference is pretty simple - SD is FAT16, SDHC is FAT32 - so, a camera like the S5, which is recorded as capable of using SDHC cards can, according to the specs, use any SDHC cards - anything up to 32GB.

Theoretically ...

I've read on s5users forum that some people have put 16GB SDHC's in their camera and used them successfully. Your mileage may vary, but it's likely to be okay.

Just make sure you don't buy a 4GB or 8GB SD card - it MUST be SDHC - because FAT16 barely goes to 4GB completely, and I'm sure that whatever tricks used to make an 8GB SD card are going to cause problems down the track.

Thanks that helped out a lot.

You're welcome.

Personally I've been waiting for 8GB SDHC cards to come down in price before I buy a couple, along with 16GB and 32GB later - useful for video recording, aided by the altered bootup firmware so I can record for as long as I like.

I'm also looking for a lens adapter that would let me connect my S5 to a telescope. That should be interesting.

I heard the Canon S5 IS is a fail camera.

I heard that Terra is hollow and Luna is made of cheese, but that doesn't make it so.

Sure, the S5 is not as technically superior as a 450D, but would a 450D take pictures worth a damn in the hands of chimp? No, it would not.

There are advantages to having a point-and-shoot, such as the smaller camera and lens size making it easier to carry the camera "just in case I see something worth catching", plus the fact that most point-and-shoots can record video as well as snapping photos. I haven't seen a single DSLR that can record video (although I guess one with a good sports mode and high speed memory card could maybe take enough quick-snaps to paste together an animated gif).

Remember, the best camera is the one you have with you, whether it's an S5, a 450D, or a phone (careful to hold it steady).

The Nikon D90, due to be released sometime this week, is to have a video mode coupled to it's 'live view' mode.

Cool. I'll have to keep an eye on that one. :)
