One of the prettiest girls I've ever known, yet one of the shyest. I finally coax her into giving me a look and smile because of a guilt trip about me leaving for school, and this is what I get.

FUCK the background. Bad photoshopping right next to her face...Other than that, I'd love to spend a few hours with her.

too bad it's kinda blown and out of focus.

And then there's this laughably bad one...

What I'm trying to get at is that when I get an opportunity, I always seemed to be just a little bit unprepared, resulting in my heart sinking into my stomach.

I know part of it is experience, but is there any type of mental checklist I can keep while I have my camera with me?

all of it is experience. the only thing you can do is meter way before hand if your going to stay in consistent light and if you know where these things will be happening you could maybe prefocus?

I think she'll be happy to know that you posted her ugly mug and name on 4chan.

Your OP shot is blurry :/ Tripod maybe ? Get some better lighting on her too,

First of all, resize your shots. Last two are wayyy too big.

Film or digital on the first 2?

It looks like you're just snapping- not actually taking the time to set up the shot and/or give them direction. Be more specific in what you're looking for. Pay more attention- you could've moved the first gal to the left a little and been perfectly fine.

The first two are digital, and my bad about the resizing...Was kinda anxious to learn something.

Things like this one, where she's not paying attention. I know I couldn't help this one much with the light...but I still feel so agitated.

Sit her down and actually have a portrait session with her with natural light, in the shade and not part-sun part shade. There's no way you will be able to take a picture of her withotu her knowing, since she'll hear the click of the camera.

Besides, trying to take a picture of her without her noticing is creepy. If she doesn't want her picture taken, then respect her wishes and don't force your hobby on her.

OP: The background on the first one is great, color and blur wise, it's not some blank backdrop but it's still neutral, and the color palette really reminds me of Dutch Golden Age paintings. The blown highlights, OTOH, really take away from it. Can you try a different process that'll bring them back some? Otherwise I really like it. If you can get those under control, it'll be awesome.

The second one- too much uncomposed but filled blank space, and a little flat.

Third is well-composed, but the flash kills it.

Fourth I think you know is not much really special.

Part-sun-part-shade is awesome light.

>click of the camera

It might help to put her at ease if OP can get ahold of something other than an SLR, preferably some little leaf-shuttered point and shoot with manual controls.

>>235679
Um, no? They're presumably close, and people do portraits of strangers without their knowing, so what would be creepy about it? Dicky, yes, but nothing creepy.

With the third one, I was really aggravated because I told a friend to "just put it on P or the green square" and she put it on the green square (Canon's Auto-Picture w/flash button). I had taken it back and barely managed to get what I did.

I will ask to do a photoshoot with the OP lady sometime in the coming week. Thanks for the advice...Practice makes perfect (or at least pretty good).
