Bird on Bird Anonymous
Hey /p/. I know there's a witty caption just waiting out there...
>> Anonymous
This photo is win.
>> beethy !vW/UaE6zYU
did you take this OP? (no exif)
if you did, fucking awesome man
>> Anonymous
OP here. Yes, it's mine. No exif as it's saved in PNG. Thanks for the compliment :)
>> Anonymous
First post here ever, btw...so yay
>> Anonymous
>>235506

pardon my skepticism, but post a version with EXIF please.
>> Anonymous
Sorry, don't know how to do that as I only have it saved in png.

nothing special...

Ok, dug around in my files and found one of the other shots I took of the same bird. This one is slightly different, but barely. I ended up going with the first one, better composition. But anyhoo, this one has the exif.

btw, ALL my final images are saved in png...better than the crappy jpg compression. Unfortunately, it destroys the exif data.
>> Anonymous
at these resolutions

a properly compressed JPG looks the same as a PNG, and it will be 1/4 of the size
>> Anonymous
That would be all fine and dandy if the images final destinations were /p/. But they aren't, so the compression matters.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY

png was made to replace gif

bng was made to replace jpeg, but alas no one supports it

use jpg
>> Anonymous
>>235530That would be all fine and dandy if the images final destinations were /p/. But they aren't, so the compression matters.

too bad it's still not a standard web format for photos
>> Anonymous
>>235530But they aren't, so the compression matters.

so you're saying you actually want larger file sizes? JPG will always be smaller and look the same to the naked eye, this is why we have compression algorithms
>> Anonymous
I'm assuming "bng" means "png". And my printing service supports it. My images aren't taken just for the web, they are printed also.
>> Anonymous
>>235543

PNG is a horrible format for printing, you must work with an amateur shop

real men use TIFF
>> Anonymous
>so you're saying you actually want larger file sizes? JPG will always be smaller and look the same to the naked eye, this is why we have compression algorithms

Yes, I want larger file sizes. Resolution and jaggy compression matters when you print large.
>> Anonymous
OP, I hate lossy compression on every level: pratical, conceptual, emotional. I shoot raw, save my processed files as PSD files, and save a resized version for my own viewing and sharing as a PNG.

But this is 4chan, it has bandwith issues, your or my pictures aren't important enough for our little anal quirks to take precedence over that. When I post a picture to /p/, I make and post a JPEG version.
>> Anonymous
>But this is 4chan, it has bandwith issues, your or my pictures aren't important enough for our little anal quirks to take precedence over that. When I post a picture to /p/, I make and post a JPEG version.

It wasn't about that, really. The point was that I was explaining why my image didn't have the exif. I can convert my pngs to jpgs for 4chan, no problem. But that won't bring the exif back.

>>235546Yes, I want larger file sizes. Resolution and jaggy compression matters when you print large.

I dare you to post a PNG and a JPG saved at the highest quality possible and find the differences.

They both will be pretty close in file size. I dare you.

Point seems to have flown away. You won't find a ready difference when the image is posted here.

OP says nighty-night and sleep tight. I'll try to remember from now on that /p/ hates png's without exif ;) Doesn't help me with my old images, but I can keep it in mind for future photos.
>> Anonymous
>>235558Point seems to have flown away. You won't find a ready difference when the image is posted here.

Uh, _why_ exactly? 4chan doesn't compress images.

Upload a 5 MB PNG and then the 2 MB JPG. And download them again, 4chan doesn't touch the files.

PNG was never meant to be used for photos. JPG and TIFF are the photo formats. Anything else can suck a dick.
>> Anonymous
>>235561
You can just go to "save as" and save a JPEG version of the PNG.

>>235569

wouldn't bring the exif back but whatever

Also for the record, PNG is lossless, but there is still compression applied.

TIFF can be uncompressed, if you want it to be.

I don't know how you managed to make the PNG over 2 MB but you just have to ask yourself if it's worth it to be almost 10 times the size for nearly unnoticeable quality increase.

But you're just proving the point, so yeah.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
>>235580
png saves at 16 for 'the best possible file' while jpeg only saves at 8. Noticeable image quality huh?
>> Anonymous
>>235586

I don't know where you're getting at.

Are you saying you can see the difference between 8 and 16-bit on an image like this and at this resolution in a browser?
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
>>235591
no it's sarcasm, blatant sarcasm, like a small naked man jumping and down behind your monitor chucking while saying SARCASM
>> Anonymous
I don't get it.
>> beethy !vW/UaE6zYU
any web photo should be JPG.. there's no reason for it not to be.
graphic shit like webpages or art with limited colors can be GIF or PNG (small as shit)
but JPG is perfect for photos.

One is 8-bit and the other is 16-bit.

But yes, they look the same. That was his point, at least I hope it was.

I can see a slight difference in the darker part next to the left eye between pictures. That being said, I compress to jpeg.
