Working with these 5D files in B&W for the first time is really interesting... even at 800 and 1600, there's so little grain. I pushed it another stop or two and then pulled the blacks in, and I really like how it turned out. And it only STARTED to get grainy. Man.

Working with black and white is a lot of fun... there's so many different ways to take every conversion.

All these are awesome; my only complaint? Not enough noise. It looks weird, since these kinda look like they're from fast film, and since they're obviously in the dark, for them to be so clean.

I thought you were saving for a D700?

*You're* jumping ship to Canon bodies by choice?

Well, if he can afford to buy a 5DII, presumably he could afford to just go down to the hardware store and buy a hammer, too. So he wouldn't need a Nikon body anymore.

>>285196
I'm just saying, he's said how much he likes the Nikon bodies and expressed irritation at the ergonomics of his 5D and other Canon bodies, so I'm surprised he'd take the 5D II over the D700.

It's just not the same thing and you know it.

I can't pass up the video capabilities, to be honest. The D700 is fuckin' phenomenal, but my next camera is gonna have video. Whether it's the D800 or 5D MkII or RED DSMC, I dunno.

Yeah, I'm with you. I think I might download Alienskin Exposure again, it had really good grain filters you could use. There's another program that's supposedly even better, if I could remember the name...

No detail in the blacks. Looks like shit.

I've been playing with the free trial version (no export) of something called TrueGrain; it seems pretty good.

I don't understand the whole grain is bad revolution.

Gotta agree here. You can't just post high contrast shots of pure black and expect me to believe you.

Can you post a multi-tone scene like a close up of a wool sweater or something and then the conversion? At 1600 ISO please. You're helping me also decide to get a 5D or a 40D. Oh, and have an example of underexposure that's been brought back up to normal.

Have you ever experience banding at 1600?

My favorite photographer Elliott Erwitt has a wonderful book called Snaps. He calls much of his work snapshots. The word implies a moment, a time, a slice of life taken with a single snap of the shutter. Its etymology is even interesting: from the early 1800s, a snapshot was a quickly execute shot at a fast-moving target. The photographic term was coined in the 1890s, when press cameras and flash powders / bulbs enabled this type of photo to exist. I think life is simply magical... amazing things happen every day. To capture that magic in a tangible record... well, that's so cool it feels like cheating. I love snapshots, I love the exhilaration that comes with chasing those moments with some strange gizmo that captures light and forms an image. I'll keep taking them until I'm pushin' up daisies.

Without an intention to cause a shitstorm, what lens or focal length did you use for these? I've read that you have mounted some of your nikon glass on your 5D before, and due to the absence of exif data in any of these, I have no choice but to ask.

I like the way these look, and I think your shots show how nice it is to have friends that dont mind getting their picture taken. I like that these pictures look very natural.

He has a 5D and likes the video capabilities of the 5DII, which the D700 doesn't have, pendejo.

<Ignoring the oncoming drama and shitstorm that is brewing>

I find this set uninspired and unimpressive. What were you attempting? What are you trying to say with these? They appear to be random snapshots taken while you were bored at uni and little else. There's not even the always-welcome hot girl in the frame to make it worth our while when stuck with mediocre work.

What makes you feel that these are good or worthy photographs?

Before you get butthurt or upset, please note that I am saying this because you are presumably asking for responses in order to better yourself by posting this thread and I am not raging or insulting you and your family randomly.

Banding can definitely happen at 1600, but you have to be looking really close to find it, and I doubt non-photographers would ever see it. At 3200 it's another story. Banding gets reaaaaally bad then.
