What does /p/ think of off-brand batteries?

You're right. Battery technology is incredibly advanced and difficult to master. There's no way any company other than the one that manufactures your camera could harness such science.

WTF, fuck that. They jack up the prices because the battery has Canon stamped on it.

It's £15 for two off-brand batteries, or £25 for one name-brand battery.
How would they know if I used an off-brand battery?

True, Canon does jack up the prices on their own batteries. But if my Canon battery fucks up my camera, Canon will replace it. If your Phottix battery fucks up, you're shit out of luck.

Explain how canon's gonna figure that one out.

In both my Rebel and 40D I've used offbrand batteries with no problems so far.

They cost $12.99 USD at mydigitaldiscount.com .

Camera autopsy with forensic testing of battery residue.

In Nikon EN-EL3e batteries, the battery actually has some electronics in it and not just the power cell. They can tell. Similar to how Sony can tell if you used a third-party charger and ended up melting your battery like thermite.

SONY dont let you use off-brand battteries due to magical circuitry in both the camera and the batteries.

Not particually fussed because sony are actually industry leaders at battery technology...

I didn't know it voided your warranty...

Anyways one time I was stupid enough to forget my battery when I went out of the country (I still don't know how I did that), and the shop I went to only had off-brand. Worked like a charm, until about two years later the battery just stopped working. It cost about 2-3 times less, but if it's unreliable like that and I end up having to a buy a new one all the time, _and_ if apparently my camera's warranty is fucked, I'll stick to the branded cells...
In this case the brand was Olympus by the way.

"Sir our $4000 forensic test proves that the owner of the d40x was using third party batteries."

I've never had a single off-brand camera battery that worked or lasted more than a few minutes. Not one. In my experience, they are all utterly and completely worthless. Don't waste your time and money.

sterlingtek.com end of story.

I've seen a few situations where cameras have had unexplainable errors, most of the time the errors are traced back to a third party battery. Apparently a lot of the really cheap chinese made batteries the voltage isn't that accurate, and can make your camera do weird things (Probably not fry it, but it may give you errors once in a while, or all the time)

Its probably a rare occurence, but obviously more common than using the official name brand batteries. How cheap you are, and how often this may occur will determine if these no name brand ones are worth buying.
However like people are saying a difference of $20 isn't much when your camera setup is often in excess of $1000
>> Anonymous
The difference isn't $20 by the way. A new Canon BP-511 at B&H is $55. A knock-off from sterlingtek is $12.

Sterlingtek: What, $15 including shipping?
Canon at my local store: At least one hundred.
>> Anonymous
Spending a couple of hundred on batteries when you've got a Rebel or a D40 is just plain dumb. If you've got a D3 or a 1D Mark III then getting the official ones seems to be the sensible thing to do.

>>279581
how exactly would you spend a couple hundred on batteries for a rebel or D40?
>> Anonymous
>>279604

Canon's battery for the 450D in the UK is about $80 each. That "exactly" is how you'd spend a lot of money on batteries easily.
>> Anonymous
I payed 16 bucks including shipping on 2 off-brand batteries for my Olympus E-510 about a year ago.

Not only do they work perfectly still, but they are higher capacity than the one Olympus makes. Fuck brand-name batteries. What a fucking ripoff.

If you've got the grip? If you're trekking or going on holiday? Plenty reasons.

i have lots of spare batteries for my camera and any other equipment available when i shoot. i don't see why someone would rage against buying spare batteries of all things.
>> OP
Well, I just ordered a pair of the batteries in the OP picture. I guess I'll see how they turn out.
