Wife: 10/10
Composition: 3/10

First off, shots of well-manicured lawns are pretty boring.>>115438was right to tell you to focus in on Mrs. OP, and not just for pervy reasons. Your wife is a good subject; the lawn is not.

Your camera is kind of crappy, so you'll have to learn to work around that. On a good camera, you can minimize your depth of field (to give you that nice out-of-focus background effect) pretty easily by just opening up your aperture. Your camera, however, doesn't have anything in the way of manual controls and has a weeee tiny sensor, so you're going to have to be tricky about it. Your best hope for minimizing the DoF is to zoom in to your longest telephoto setting, set your ISO to the minimum, get her somewhere moderately dark so that your camera will choose a wide aperture, and get close.

Next, you need to work on your lighting. Bright outdoor light like that doesn't work too well for portraiture, and not just because it means your wife has to wear big-ass ugly sunglasses. Your lighting is very flat. You want your picture to have a sense of depth and texture.

>>115475
why would I lie?

And yes she is hot, at this moment she is 6 months preggers
:)
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
Now, for the specific criticism:
>>115436
Boring lawn, as I said. No real subject. The best thing in the frame is only half in the frame and she's overpowered by the boring crap in there. The shot basically has no composition at all. It looks as if it were taken by accident.

>>115440
You've centered your wife's head right in the middle of the scene, which is a common beginner mistake. Her feet are thereby cut off, while most of the frame is filled with boring landscape and distracting background elements. Get closer, and fill the shot with her. See my previous post for some pointers on how to separate her from the background as much as possible. Also, tell her to take off the stupid sunglasses.

>>115445
This is the closest one to good composition, but there are still a lot of mistakes. First off, I'd have taken it in portrait orientation and left her knees, purse, and empty coffee cup out of it. Second, I'd have moved her a bit--the light that's hitting her is *not* flattering. If you look at her right eye, it looks fine. Her left looks like you've been beating her or, at least, that she hasn't gotten any sleep in weeks. The hard light leads to a really bad bad shadow under her eye. Additionally, there's a bright highlight on her shoulder. Her shoulder should not be the main attention point of the photo. She's moved her glasses out of the way, and that's good, but they're still on her head, and that's bad.

>>115456
Distracting background elements are distracting. A lot of it's just that I'm a photographer, but my eye's immediately drawn to that telephone, then the bright red guitar, then the thermostat on the wall, and the plant is positioned such that it appears to be coming out of the top of her head. Her pose could use some work, too. Make use of that beautiful hair. Show off the cleavage more. Accentuate the curves. She doesn't look like she's posing so much as she was reaching for the phone and was too lazy to walk around the piano.

Thankyou for your response. I don't think it was only the grass, but I take you point well. I appreciate the technical tips I think I should get a camera but I only have a couple hundred for that . Suggestions? 300$ price range?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>115482
Canon PowerShot A-Series is always the answer.

If you really want to get serious about photography--and with a wife that hot, I sure as hell hope you do--then you might want to look into waiting another couple of months until your budget's up to $400 or $500 and then buying a digital SLR.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
Olympus just announced a big price drop for their cameras. £150 off some kits. Canon and Nikon's budget DSLRs have been quietly dropping in price too. Maybe because of the run up to PMA.

Scenario 2: Butterfly trolls this board with Sony bullshit and "no I'm not posting photographs." Almost every thread includes at least one post of her, and often someone requesting photographic proof she's female.

A bit better. The background's still a bit messy, but not nearly as much as in the other shot.

The main suggestion I'd give is to not use the on-camera flash (and pick up a tripod, 'cause the lighting there wouldn't have been enough to handhold). Light from a camera's built-in flash is really best used only in bright daylight when your subject's back is to the sun (i.e., fill flash).

Suggestions for improving your composition:
1. Fill the frame with your subject more.
2. Don't put her dead center in the frame. Move around a bit. Read up on the so-called Rule of Thirds as a starting point for better composition.
3. Experiment with looks other than her looking straight at the camera and smiling. For instance, have her look away from the camera with her eyes while her face is pointed towards it, and vice versa. Serious expression, playful expression, annoyed expression. Laughing and throwing back her hair. Etc.
4. Get closer. Unless your background is adding to the picture, it's hurting it. Getting a closer crop on your subject is a good way to deal with that.
5. Lighting. Lighting lighting lighting lighting LIGHTING. Find someplace that has some nice directional light and get her into it. Don't use flat flash lighting.
6. Most importantly: Less clothing.
