hey guys my sisters are getting me a camera and i thinking between either a canon g9 or a nikon d40, something in that prince range ~500

is there a big difference in image quality between the two? i'm from /cgl/ and would like to take pictures of my friends in costumes, and some photoshoots and would like to achieve some effect as in op, but i'm also worried about size and compactness

also, is there a better camera than those two that is around that price range?

One is an SLR and one is a point-and-shoot. Decide which kind of camera you want.

If you wanna achieve the same quality son, there's a hell of a long road to follow... and I mean that you'll have to learn photography, make-up, lighting, photoshop, and getting a good model, if you are worried about compactness I feel free to conclude that you won't do it in the next year... you don't even know what a SLR is! do you think we here on /p/ just go there buy a camera and the pictures are done? nah, nvm.

The difference in image quality won't be noticeable only if you shoot in bright daylight and use minimal sensitivity on the G9. Otherwise, D40 (and any other SLR camera) wins by a large margin, even if it has less megapixels.

As for portraits and photoshoots of people in costumes, G9 fails because it won't allow you to take pictures with blurry background like the one you posted, and D40 fails because it can't autofocus with most lenses useful for this kind of photography. So I suggest you better get a Canon 350D and an additional Canon 50/1.8 EF lens for it.

Also to consider - Pentax K100D Super.

Lacks cheap portrait lenses (as do Olympus and Sony)

sage because of my fanboyism but i got a 50mm f1.7 for 60gbp for my Alpha which is dirt cheap for lenses (certianly here in ukland, its really 50$ equiv) so NO U! (it was the minolta but whats bad about that?)

Yeah thats the main drawback with the d40 is that ur forced into using nikon af-s lenses if you want autofocus. Even though a Rebel XT or XTi may seem to be a "inferior" camera compared to the D40, the overall lens choice blows the D40 away.
BTW the canon 50mm f1.8 costs around 75-80 bucks US, and its worth every penny.

These threads raise my blood pressure.

Sounds like the OP wants something simple. Go with the point and shoot. No need to fuck around with lenses and a bulky SLR if you're just taking photos of your friends.

Then again, if someone else is buying it for you, just get the D40

If OP needs picture the quality of Kipi, go with a DSLR. Otherwise, a P&S will suffice.

if you aren't gonna use it to take naked pictures of them, fuck off.

You've got your exchange rate wrong. 60gbp = ~$120US.

(Which is a little more expensive than the 50mm f/1.8s for Canon and Nikon sell for here)

I know what the exchange rate is thats why i said equiv to $50 because everything is so redicuosly over-priced here. It may have cost me $120 to buy here but if i went to americaland it would have cost more around $50-60 than $120.

Ahhh. That makes sense then.
