Hey /p/. I've been majoring in Photography at college and I went on vacation last week to Costa Rica. Has my practice been paying off? How can I improve?

You either major in photography at a really bad school or you're trolling.

*shoot in raw
*expose for the highlights, and then work w/ the rest
*create a difinitive ground/forground relationship that is clearer than the leaves
*take me with you

no, that makes you common

lol, a major in photography. that's about as useful as a major in journalism.

what's wrong with photography majors, exactly? Assuming you don't suck at photography, that is.

People that hire photographers don't generally care how qualified you are, and generally only look at your past work / references.

Photography school also arguably can't teach you how to take a good photograph, as it is considered an Art, there is more natural skill assumed to take part in it

Also I fixed up your color balance. Mostly anyway.

(not OP, just a noob) did you use curves or something else to do that?

they can (good schools, at least) teach you better technique though, help you improve your natural eye, and help with job placement. Either way, it's not a bullshit major any more than any other arts major is. It can also be rewarding for the experience alone.

No, its just called Color balance
In photoshop you get to set the balance of
Yellow - blue
Cyan - red
Magenta - Green
For Shadows, Highlights and Midtones

You simply slide the sliders around untill you get a better looking image.
You could also do auto color and see how that handles the image (though its often totally off, sometimes it helps to see if theres too much of a single color)

Cause if you don't suck at photography, you might as well get a different major you can actually make money from to support your hobby of photography.

in b4 lol, pro. Making money from photography doesn't make you a professional. Using photography as your main source of income to provide for yourself/family makes you professional and to get to that level, "not sucking" is not enough. Your photos need to be fucking orgasmic and majoring in photography won't help you as much as you think it would.

I suggest you try out film because the simple limitation of 36 frames means you can't waste anything. The best photographers are usually the ones that click less because they've already planned the scene out in their head and most of the time only need one shot to pull it off unlike most newbies who can't decide on a perspective or angle and just try random shit and review until it looks good.

Well I for one have a photography major. During the time that I was learning I was also working as a photographers assistant and I say that if someone wants to major in photography, go for it. Just be absolutely sure it's something you want to do.

lol, I love it when artists use this myth to make themselves feel special

anything can be learned.

This is absolute truth, and I'm someone with a lot of "natural skill" in many aspects. It's all about exposure and learning. Since kids learn faster than adults, many young faggots grow up with a pompous, self-fellating attitude for no other reason than they were shown more things as a kid. Like their father's cock.

There are arts where some innate physical aptitude is required for greatness- dance or painting, for instance. Then one has to learn how to use that aptitude right and then learn to use it well.

There are others- writing, photography, for instance- where one just has to learn how to do something right and then learn to do it well.

>There are arts where some innate physical aptitude is required for greatness- dance or painting, for instance.
No, there aren't. Those can be learned too.
>> Anonymous
>>215879
No, someone needs some inherent physical knack to move a brush just the right way or the right sort of physical composition to be a dancer.
>> Anonymous
>>215883
No they don't. Babies aren't born as dancers. Infants and children learn it over time. If they learn it at the same time they're learning how to move in general, it becomes imprinted on their most basic movements. When being learned by an adult without previous dance experience, their progress is somewhat hindered by learning how to move without facilities for dance in mind. However, this in no way whatsoever makes it impossible for a person, of any age as long as they're in good physical condition, to learn how to dance very professionally and successfully.

And lol at comparing painting to dance.

Lol, no...they don't. You only think they do because people tell you that and you believe them and because you can't paint or dance.

"Natural talent" for an art is usually more like a natural interest in it.

>more like a natural interest in it.
And even that interest is "unnaturally" (non-instinctively) created by the parents or other influences on the child.

At least there are some people in this world that aren't idiots. <3 sage
