If you're going to troll /p/, you should probably decide whether you're going to troll for Canon or troll for Sony. I recommend going for Canon, 'cause we've already got a guy pretending to be a girl who trolls for Sony.

There really isn't such a thing as a beginner slr.

I suggest you get something like a ... Canon g9 instead. They have just as many (or more) megapixels, plenty of range in one lens, and they are tons smaller.

Thats about better than an SLR in every way.

...other than image quality, ease of use (in terms of being able to change important settings quickly and easily), and flexibility.
>> Lenses are the key SharkD
The key to SLR choices are not the bodies -- it's the lenses that you should focus on. Bodies, while relatively expensive, are disposable. Lenses are the long-term investment. Personally, I prefer Canon, and it doesn't hurt that they've made a long term commitment to the EOS lens mount (Nikon keeps changing their mounts/contacts).

Nikon have been using same mount since 1959, they have been using different connectors (NAI, AI, AI'd, AIS Lenses), but all those lenses works with new digital cameras. They haven't connectors since they went to AF. Canon on the other hand changed their mount when they went to AF.

And to stay on topic, rather D70 then EOS350D. EOS350D is little and plastic and not very comfortable to use, D70 is bigger, more solid and much more comfortable. When it comes to image quality they are pretty the same.

That said, beware of D70's ISO performance above 800. It's noisy as bollocks, but if you convert that to black and white, it's as pleasing as fast Tri-X.

Also D70's wireless capabilities with Nikon speedlights.
