Can you make some recommendations on a tripod?. I'm 6'3", do a lot of hiking, have a heavy camera (20D w/ battery grip), and I'm on a tight budget.

I'm pretty set on a pan & tilt since any time I'll be tracking will be handheld.

How screwed am I? What's the absolute cheapest I can get away without regretting the purchase?

Well, sometimes you can get away with a cheap monopod/walking stick. They cheap monopods are usually bit taller than most cheap tripods. Works for me, but it sounds like a bit of a compromise for you.

Cheapest without regretting the purchase is going to start at $150, unless you buy used or like wobbly plastic bullshit. (anger at crappy tripods, not at OP)

get a gorilla pod or something small, you can just prop it up on a rock and it's very portable.
Plus they're very cheap

here's an idea for a monopod, very cheap

Or you can get one of these for a few bucks, I have one. Try it out on your camera first, it might not support a 20D.

I followed your monopod link and now I'm tempted to buy the shitty 70" tripod with it for $50 shipped for both.

I know the tripod is absolute shit but

a) I don't plan on using it enough to justify $150 right now
b) It's only $30 bucks, it's not a permanent solution but hopefully it can hold me over until I can afford a Manfrotto

theres no point in saying itll hold you over. youll just spend more than you need that way. just wait it out if you want.
