Charging Anonymous
I've been thinking about charging for my photography services lately.

I take promo pictures for local bands and stuff.

I don't know how much to charge, or how to charge.

Hourly?
In general?

I also feel bad about taking money from my friends haha!
But a photographer has to make a living somehow.

Picture related..?
>> Anonymous
Yup.
Tis my camera.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
don't charge your friends, your camera sucks, your photography sucks, you're not a working photographer by any measure of the term.

you're the equivalent of the guy who walks around tourist traps and charges five bucks a polaroid.
>> Anonymous
this is a joke right?

you're gonna charge your friends for taking pictures with a shitty point and shoot that another friend would have probably done instead?

What next...gonna ask for a 401k plan and health insurance?

Enjoy having no friends.
>> Anonymous
let them pay in nature
>> Anonymous
Even a camera like that can take amazing photos.

Don't judge a camera by its looks.

Set up a multiply or a gallery or something and attract attention to yourself. You might get noticed and hired to do gigs or stuff. Just like all the other hopefuls out there.

Or you could just sell prints.
>> Anonymous
Post your best photograph or best series of photographs.
>> Anonymous
Yeah I have examples of my photos on a website.

I got lots of compliments on them as well.
People have even asked me to take pictures for their bands and stuff.

and I guess I should start charging or selling prints.
I want to save up for a Canon EOS 5D.

Well I could link you to my Deviant Art.
But I'm not sure.

nevermind.

I was the one to bring the camera up, yet did none of the flaming. Wow. Post some photos/link us to your gallery.

it's okay, we're all kind and good natured individuals
>> Anonymous
>>146373
Okay, link please. Just show us some of your photos. You realize there's a million kids with point and shoots shooting their friends' bands? (I've been one of them.)

And most of them are shit. (Yep, been there, too.)

So we're all a little wary of this situation. Assuage us.

Haha, that's why I come to 4chan, for good natured individuals, or was it "hackers on steroids"? I forget.

"I also feel bad about taking money from my friends haha!

Oh yeah, cause you're a photographer. Most photographers also spend more than $100 on their work equipment.
>> Anonymous
>>146388
How about $120 + shipping? LOL.
>> Anonymous
>>146388

My camera cost a little over $300 if I remember right.
Not sure.
but i'm pretty happy with it.

Must have been quite a while ago.

You should at least get a SLR camera to ask people to pay for your ''work'', cause those aren't professionnal AT ALL.

Too late now.

Now I just need to save up for a new camera.
a Canon EOS 5D
Plus different lenses.

Did you just google "expensive camera" to find one?
>> Anonymous
>>146403
wtf? You seriously don't know? It's branded, first off. Well they originated as cheap film cameras coming out of china in the 70's, but due to their weird effects soon became somewhat popular among certain crowds. Now not so much, but you can still find them in trendfag places like Urban Outfitters and the like.

Well, at least you have the balls to post them. I'd honestly suggest learning more about photography and getting a decent camera before charging anything though.

why are they blurry?
is that supposed to be a "dreamy" effect? i dont understand
>> if we were friends Anonymous
i'd kick you in the nuts.

yes, p&s are capable of taking good photos but you have to see it from their perspective. why would i pay a 'friend' with a walmart camera when i could get another friend to do it for free? if i was going to pay someone i'd go get someone with professional equipment.

you're not seeing the opportunity through your own douchebaggery. you use the photos of your friends who themselves are just getting start and don't have money to make a portfolio which you turn around and show to more established clients who have the capacity to pay you at a professional level.

charging your 'friends' is 1) dumb because they have relatively little money at this stage. you're bleeding a stone and 2) making yourself look like a 'tard. if they happen to make it big, do you think they'll turn back to that friend who charged them back when they had nothing?

man, i don't even think you understand the opportunity you have. i hope you take some awesome ass shots because thinking is obviously not your strong suit.
>> Anonymous
>>146433

Exactly what I was thinking of doing.
>> Anonymous
>>146436
Yup

Dream blur effect.
I rather like the look.
But of course I won't use it on all my photos.
>> Anonymous
>>146438

I said I was THINKING of charging.
Didn't say I was.

I've been doing it for free because it's fun.
But recently one of the bands offered to pay me and were asking my charges.
I was confused about pricing and just told them I'll do it for free.

I probably won't charge until I get a better camera.
Or if I work for some company or whatever.
>> Anonymous
>>146440
its fucking retarded, not to mention old.
only use this effect every once in a while, MAYBE for like some trees or something??

there was a good demonstration of the effect yesterday i think, a picture with some film infront of the lens if i remember correctly.
>> Doitle
Why do you insist on completely blowing out every sky? Do you live near a continuously exploding nuclear bomb?

Speaking as one of the people whose been busting your balls, the sepia one might actually like good if

it was grayscale instead of sepia

not blurry

>>146443
charging and accepting donations are two separate things. even if you do the work for free, you can mention that you're saving up for equipment and any donations would be great. that way you still keep things kosher and keep the heir that you're taking the photog thing seriously.

btw, to add to the confusion, i think your pics work well considering your target demographic and that you're in high school. you'll get better over time as you pick up more techniques to your arsenal.
>> Anonymous
>>146456
Thanks lol.

But actually I'm out of high school :3

I was planning on going to the Brooks Institute of Photography here in California.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>146458

it's a total rip-off, go to a state school instead.

actually..... it might be right up your alley. they grade photos by how much you could sell it for. honest to god.

I hate the blurry effect on these, makes them look like shit.

your shitty editing is shitty (kinda like those godawful asian dream photos)
and you are way too shit to be charging anybody anything

oh, in that case ...
think about taking a year off or going to jc for a year.

certain fields/industries require long and extensive schooling. photography isn't one of them ... at least not the type you're taking. the two skills you should really work on are socializing and connections. and schools like brooks will do nothing but confuse you and put you into debt.

i suggest getting a nice entry-level job and start funding your gear. the faster you do that the better you are in the long-run. focus on a nice dslr and a prime and then run with it. trust me, you'll be three years closer to that $5,000/gig fantasy shoot with hawt naked models who enjoy cock just getting out there and getting your own independent work done than going to any institution.

any schooling you need can easily be filled in a year or two down the line at a jc course or browsing online.

as far as a job, i suggest anything that isn't related to anything photography/photoshop. working at a copy hut or an amusement park souvenir stand might actually stunt your development because of premature burnout.

oh yeah, and GO TO SLEEP! damn you kids and your lack of discipline. how the hell do you expect people to take you seriously when all you do is listen to bad music and stay up all night?
