you've got the light spot on basically!
>> Anonymous
>>172556
what did you do on this one? did you just get him jumping?

Also how many flashes are you using? i don't know if it's 2 or 3.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
it's two flashes, and this is why i hate strobist.

>>172574

not op: but I think theres 2, judging from the lighting on 172574.
one of the flashes if off cam, bottom left corner.
and the other flash is on the cam, could be pointing up, and using a bounce card to get a very soft diffused light.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
The kid's too bright, doesn't look natural and takes him out of context.
>> Gurka !!1FGiaTI46rX
Thanks guys.

>>172574
He was jumping off a trampoline!
There are two flashes, one into an umbrella (silver umbrella for the first pic and white shoot-through for the other two) and the other one was undiffused, used as fill for the first and rim light for the rest.

>>172575
Yeah, I guess it's quite gimmicky etc etc but it's quite fun and we had a great time shooting.

>>172581
Thanks for your input! Also, you're right, I'm still learning though, I've only had these flashes for about three weeks.
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH
>>172584
Mind if I ask what strobes you were using? Im looking into buying a kit.

I'd prefer Bowens, but right now I cant afford to splash out on a lovely pair :(

I'm using an SB-600 and a Vivitar 285HV with ebay triggers. Really cheap and nothing fancy, but it works.

Might as well post some moar strobist faggotry while I'm at it. This was supposed to be an ad for the model's extremely durable t-shirt lol.

Well if you're going for an ad look to the lighting, ignore my previous comment.
Highlights look a little bright on this one.

uh, what?

just because people use 2 flashes and it's STROBIST FUCK THAT GUY

what the fuck
>> Anonymous
>>172575
>this is why i hate strobist.

Agreed.
The first 3 shots here are AWFUL in terms of composition, and the only thing that makes them at all interesting is that they're technically well-lit.
Also the kid's socks-&-sandals are fucking HORRIBLE.

>>172596
I work in the apparel biz.
Technically this shot is good, but GOD DAMN IT THE SHIRT IS YOUR FUCKING SUBJECT so make sure it isn't SCRUNCHED UP TO FUCK. Shit is too high on the waist, pants are too low, shirt scrunched up terribly on the left, etc etc.

The image is clearly shooped to fuck, but that's OK in an advertising situation.

The shirt being scrunched, however, is NOT ok at all.

>just because people use 2 flashes and it's STROBIST FUCK THAT GUY

No, just because people use 2 flashes in a very specific and cliché way to produce generic and easily imitate-able photographs that exhibit poor composition and focus primarily on lighting effects it's STROBIST FUCK THAT GUY

>who cares about the cliché of the 'strobist' style.
>at the end of the day: this is a nice photo.

Three classic criteria for critiquing a work:

1. What is the artist trying to do?

Presumably make us laugh by doing a staged comic photograph, ala pskaught or "Dali Atomicus."

2. How well did he do it?

Not well at all. Very visually cliched style, lighting too harsh, composition is poor, actor is trying waaaaaaaaay too hard, costume design is fucked in a bad way, not in a good, funny way.

3. Was it worth doing?

No, not really. Pskaught's work explores social themes, "Dali Atomicus" is a photographic interpretation of Dali's persona and work, and this is just some shmuck pretending to be three year olds and we're supposed to think it's funny. Probably wouldn't have been worth it even if it was just funny. Good work almost always isn't so simplistic; it brings more to the table than an attempt at a two-second-laugh.
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH
>>172641
>3. Was it worth doing?

Referring to OPs earlier post:
>but it's quite fun and we had a great time shooting.

^If you enjoy doing something, then in my opinion - its worth it.

Alright guys, point taken, thanks for your input.

>>172641
>3. Was it worth doing?
Yes. Because of this and because of your critique, I learned something. You can't expect to get the perfect results immediately, right? And if I wouldn't have posted these pictures here, I would have thought they were fine and that would have been it.

Posting another pic with shitty composition and an actor trying waaaaaaaaay too hard that you'll probably hate. :D

Welcome to photography, nothing is original anymore. He chose a style and i think he did it well.

I'm definately a fan of your stuff gurka, keep posting on /p/! when it comes down to it, there's nothing wrong with strobist style. your t-shirt photo turned out really damn good.

>>172651
No, I like this one. This one's funny, the composition's good, and the actor's doing just about right.

When I/whoever came up with this list (I've seen it attributed to more people than humans have digits) said "worth doing," it's not meant in a literal sense... God knows I take plenty of pictures not worth doing... but as a starting-off point for criticism: "Is this a work that advances something meaningful," or "Does this do something for people not otherwise concerned with it," etc.

"Nothing is Original" is the excuse made by copycat hacks in all fields.

this is all okay.
out of the first three, the third is by far the best. Though I have to agree with>>172641about not much thought being put into these. Its just some dude making goofy faces, and I have to say his face kind of bugs me. (I know I shot puke)
>>172559
pretty good, your side-light is killing me, its so close to a good position, but that spill on his face isn't working. You either need to throw some diffusion on the thing to soften it out or put it more behind him.

I get what you're doing with movement and I think thats why I like it, the cape is pretty cool and his postion is nice.

>>172651
you rushed through this way too fast. lighting is too flat and that little thing on the right side of frame needs to disapear. I dig the wallpaper texture and get the whole movement thing, but that guy bugs me.. also put some cereal in that bowl. As far as the toast, cool design element but obviously shooped in separately. I think if you would have done a plate shot to make it look a little more organic. OJ as well, too much shooping where nothing looks like its the same resolution.

Just fine tune you work and put a little more time and thought in it and it'll be pretty great.
