L is just Canon's really expensive lenses. The 85 f/1.8 can be made high quality for reasonably cheap, so it doesn't get an L. The 85 f/1.2 can be made high quality, but it ain't cheap. It gets an L.
If Canon figures out something that'll blow UD glass and flourite elements out of the water, Ls will start using them. If Canon figures out how to make UD glass and flourite elements really cheaply, non-L lenses will start using them.
