FINALLY!

A reasonable-quality shot of my girlfriend. She is terminally camera shy.

anyway this isn't as good as i'd like it to be. i overexposed her FACE for gods sake. but i'm asking for C&C anyway. and suggestions.

another shot of her and a friend of hers. i wish i could remove the distracting junk from this one because i like the blur effect that i somehow created. it's just the wrong side of salvageable i think.

Do a google on it for details but basically its the light point, object, color WHATEVER that you're setting your ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperature for.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Metering = Getting the light reading to determine the shutter speed and aperture to use. When you half-press your shutter button, it locks in the metering in addition to the focus (and there's probably a way you can do that independent of the focus lock, but I don't know how to do it on an S3IS). One of the things you should get good at doing if you don't just shoot manual all the time is taking a meter reading off of one part of the scene and then recomposing. E.g., if your subject is sitting in front of a window and you want her in silhouette, you take a meter reading off of the window and then recompose with the girl in the scene. If you want the window to be a bright white light and the girl to be clear, take a meter reading off of the girl and then recompose to include the window.

oh okay. i thought that metering was something i had to do independently. i always use autofocus on the S3 because manual focus is a pain in the cock and really really slow, so i have trouble with your technique (which i have employed before) because it autofocuses at the wrong length.

none of this is a problem wheni have time to compose a shot, but i got these 2 very opportunistically when she was in a situation she couldn't squirm away from.

anything else i should know about metering?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
Incidentally, this would've been a good place to use fill flash to deal with the shadows on her face. Also, she's got a definite "I'm posing for a picture" look on her face, along with some squinting from the sun--it's not really something you can manipulate yourself, but overcast days are actually better for portraiture because the clouds act to diffuse the light and you don't get squinting or harsh shadows.

Very cute, though.
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
oh and in addition i believe i remember focusing on her face before i recomposed. so i guess i did use that technique, and i guess it still overexposed her. hm.

well she WAS posing for a picture -- a professional picture taken of her and the whole wedding party. i got her to look my way for a sec and snapped a shot while she couldn't move.

i think most of the reason i'mnever satisfied with my photos is because my main interest in photography is photojournalism and that makes me focus on capturing what's happening at a moment's notice instead of taking my time to set up and compose. also the fact that i have to trick my girlfriend into letting me photograph her.

I'm glad that my girlfriend lets me snap random shots of her at any time without complaining. I think complimenting her all the time makes her a lot less camera-shy.

that's a pretty nice shot. i can't believe i started this thread with a crappy portrait like mine, yuck. i really do have to learn to take my time.

anyway as far as the gf goes there won't be much more light bouncing off her and hitting my sensor no matter what i do. she just hates hates hates hates hates getting her picture taken. i should learn to work with models too.

Mine gets annoyed with me taking pictures of her after I've done it a lot. But, ironically, always really likes them after I've taken 'em. I think ideally, she'd like me to be able to take lots of pictures of her without her actually having to be present at the time.

Wow that was poorly worded. Lemme try again:

If I've been taking a shitload of pictures of my girlfriend, it starts to get on her nerves. And she hates when I take pictures of her in restaurants or stores or other places like that. But once I've taken the pictures, she's always happy that they've been taken, 'cause she's pretty egotistical and likes looking at 'em.

My other girlfriend (pic related) hasn't been dating me as long, so she's more apt to just roll with it if I'm taking her picture.

>>52910
Actually, that was a lucky picture... I was just playing around and snapping away, and it turned out that I got a few good ones out of the bunch. Anyways, it seems the pictures come out much better when she doesn't even know I'm going to take a picture of her. They feel much more natural because she's not trying too hard to make a pose or look good on the camera.

It's overexposed.

The OP said that it's overexposed. Welcome to the fucking thread, genius.

>> OMG what an Ugly GirlFriend DigiPix
Cool! In addition to being camera shy, she is also a terminally ugly. Not being offensive just letting you knowwhat you already know...the camera is not her friend. But some folks are like that though...they look ok in erson but just to ugly to frozen in time by a photograph. I expect thats the case with her too. Any way good job!

You need to train her better. More whip and less love!

But seriously, I'd trash photo like that. It's just over exposured and your gf just isn't looking good in that photo.
Though, I'm not saying that she's ugly, but the photo just doesn't do any good to her. The pose just don't work.

Maybe you could ask her next time to think giant whales eating penises. That always makes people react and forget their poses.

Here's my gf posing.
