saturday I did a lot of shooting where I gelled (colored) my flash, and set my camera to Tungsten WB, so I could balance flash light with ambient light without getting color casts.
I always use M mode. like on a catwalk I shot at ISO 800 1/160th at f/4, that was 2/3rd stops below correct exposure. then I flashed it in, gives nice results and freezes motion.
oh yeah, more appropriately, its called fill flash. I also use fill flash in broad daylight to kill harsh shadows in portraits
