Photographically, the only thing wrong I can spot is that the flower should be a bit (though not much) closer to the center of the frame, and at a slightly different angle to the camera: the red thing a bit more in front.

Otherwise, drop the border; it's not necessary.

Lastly, it's against /p/ etiquette to post a full-size image. Resize to something smaller. I don't mind, but most people do, and it will likely get your photograph more views and better views, because they can see the whole thing at once without its quality being raped by browser size reduction.

not a bad concept, seems well exposed, maybe a little hot on the top of the white bud. My main advice would be "buy a tripod". A reflector would help even out the light on your subject. You could hack one together for cheap as free.

flowers are good in high detail and high contrast with vivid colors and sharp focus. generally the closer the better. i don't want to tell you that this photo is crap because it has some redeeming qualities but it is just not pleasant enough to look at. the foreground doesn't fully distinguish itself from the background. the bud on the right is small and uninteresting and the blossom on the left is bland and unfocused. when fully sized, nothing is sharp and clear in the photo.

you have some good basic composition and are applying at least a few aesthetic principles on an OK level here. it is clear that you knew that you wanted to make this little piece of flora stick out and show its essence in front of its surroundings but the execution is lacking.

not that i'm an expert or anything, but here's my favorite flower picture i've taken so far. personally i find it a lot more pleasing than yours. hopefully some of the regulars here will agree with me and tell you why.

oops.
here it is again, a little less annoyingly enormous.

thank god for imageboards. i just saved this smaller image over the larger one and have to redownload my own photo from the intertubes.

I took my picture while outside, so I was a little weary about taking my father's tripod outside. Do you have any advice to taking sharper images when not using a tripod? I can't seem to take a sharp photo without using my camera's mini-flash.

figure out a way to keep your hands reeeeally still, and/or get a camera that features image stabilization. I'm a huge fan of IS, it basically means for me that i don't need a tripod at all because i shoot casually and as a hobby.

that was eerily polite.
