Exif says "no flash"...

standard lamp?
>> Anonymous
the guy said he used a flash on the other forum, and f5.6 to overpower the sun the lamp would have to be huge!!

meh.

I've read putting a bit of tape on a certain part of the hot shoe (to prevent an electrical connection) will allow you to get faster flash sync with the occasional misfire
>> Anonymous
I don't think you understand why there's a limit on the flash sync speed.
It certainly has nothing to do with tape on your hotshoe.

and overpowering the sun can be easily done with 2 or 3 strobes

Nope. He's right, you have the dumb.

The reason for flash sync speed is that, for extra-fast shutter speeds, most SLRs don't actually open the shutter all the way. Like say that the flash sync speed is 1/200th. If you shoot at 1/400th, the shutter will only open halfway and will move across the frame at that same speed as it does for the 1/200th shots. 1/800th, same thing--half the shutter blade separation of 1/400th, but they'll move at the same speed as 1/200th.

The reason that you have a flash sync speed, therefore, is that with faster speeds, the shutter is only partially open when the flash goes off. So you'll get flash on some fraction of the frame, but the flash happens too quickly and won't get the parts of the frame that the shutter's open slit hasn't traveled over yet.

So how did this guy get 1/3200th flash sync? Because he's using a D50. The Nikon D50 and D70 don't use a physical shutter for the faster speeds, they just turn the sensor on and off really quickly. I assume they still use a shutter for the slower speeds, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

The reason for the "tape the contacts" thing is because the D50 and D70, although it's perfectly capable of syncing at ultrafast speeds, *won't* if it knows it has a flash attached because Nikon is run by bastard coated bastards with bastard filling who arbitrarily limit the capabilities of their low-end cameras because they want you to buy the higher-end ones. So the trick works with sync-only flashes (like the Vivitar 285HV and such) with no problem, but only works with Nikon-branded flashes if you cover up the dedicated Flash sync terminals so the camera doesn't realize it has a Nikon flash on it.

Ac, you're a god, but I don't understand why your photos arn't great though :(

Well, one could be charitable and say that I don't post the good ones here... But more likely it's just because technical knowledge doesn't necessarily translate to artistic ability.

CHDK will give you 1/65000th flash sync.<3
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>253421
That too.

On a related note, cameras with leaf shutters (e.g., small point & shoot cameras) tend to have absurdly fast flash sync since it's a lot easier to open a little in-lens diaphragm than to move a big focal-plane shutter. Which is why a lot of strobistfags like the canon G9.

When I use my D70 and cactus v2s to fire my strobes, I can only reach about 1/600th of a second, otherwise the flash won't fire. Why?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>253431
Because there's a limit to the speed at which the Cactus v2 and the flash can respond, too.

>>253434
Oh ok, thanks. So what would give you the highest speed? PW's?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>253436
PWs would probably help, yeah. The Cactus claims up to 1/1000th, but it also claims "Not obviously a piece of crap hand-soldered in a Chinese sweatshop", so it's unclear how much truth there is to that.

I should try and see how fast I can sync with my D50 now that I've fixed its LCD...

(Full disclosure: I don't actually know if the PWs would be better or if the issue is with your flash. You've hit the edge of my personal experience and knowledge with that question. So don't go out and spend $400+ on pocketwizards and then yell at me because they didn't give you the flash sync speed you wanted)

After reading this I messed around with my cam abit; Couldn't manage to get a blurred motion shot with a flash sync firing at 1/200th.

Time to do abit of maths!
Say the subject was moving 30mph (possible, i guess)
They are travelling at 0.5mi (800m) a minute
Thats 13.3m every second,
6cm every 200th of a second.

Im pretty sure 6cm would be noticable, but for some reason after testing this theory there was still no blur.

Then I hit my head against the wall, many times, as I realsied the flash duration of the SB600 is 1/3400th of a second at 1/4 power; Meaning the subject blur would only last around 4mm. In other words: unnoticable.

tl:dr; I suck cocks, and need to go back to school.

Haha, no worries. I'll probably just get a battery for my studio strobe to use it outdoors and use f/16 and 1/400 or something instead of 1/3200. Thanks for your help!

D50 doesn't support that. AC is right for this, the D50 and D70 are pretty wicked for their electronic shutter.

And I've tested that on my D300 / D200 (FP Sync), Its close to useless. It saps so much of your flash power that its not probable to use.

You're a fucking idiot.

You don't use a high sync speed to freeze motion, you goddamn retard.
