From the competitions I've been in the judges almost always verbally address technical flaws before anything else. I like the first picture, too, but it wouldn't hold up in competition regardless of content. Any time I've seen something place that had glaring technical flaws it was PJ work.
I'm not saying you shouldn't go and enter competitions but be prepared for disapointment. Don't let it bring you down.

You're going to get that a lot more often at a Floral-themed contest than, say, an art gallery sponsored contest. It doesn't hurt to do research on past years' winners or what the judges likes and dislikes are. That is, if you care to win. Shooting for winning may or may not be something you end up liking to do. Don't forget to prepare the piece closely to the rules, too. Usually it's just black or white matte, but sometimes they want things framed
