What does /p/ think of Voigtlaender lenses? Are they good, or it's mediocre shit that's expensive just because of the brand? I want to get myself a fast prime for Christmas, and I'm wondering if something like a Voigtlander 58/1.4 will be any better than your default Nikkor.

I've seen them cropping up from time to time in reviews and discussions. You might have trouble in finding it in the mount and focal length you want. Not too commonly stocked. You have to watch out that the brand name has been used for both cheap crappy and quality gear. I'd imagine it will be a manual focus lens too.

I don't know if it'll be objectively better, like with higher resolution or whatever. Probably, but that's not the point of buying particular lenses. Different ones have different looks, and one of these is going to look very different than a Noct-Nikkor 58/1.2. (It'll also surprisingly be much cheaper.)

Yes, I know they're all manual focus. However, they reportedly have chips that enable metering on cheaper Nikon bodies, so they're at least handier than native Nikon MF lenses.

Pretty damn good. They do a lot of Manufacturing for bigger companies, or name brands like Zeiss.
They also make some damn fine LTM and M mount lenses.

Where sells these? I want to check prices on some of their crazy 35mm f1.2 lenses

OP here, I just ordered an Ultron SL II 40mm f/2, hope something comes out of it.

You can try those random small camera shops that sell Leica, Zeiss and stuff like that to collectors and photography geeks; but it's usually expensive. I ordered my lens at Cameraquest - buying lenses over the internet isn't probably the best idea, but hey, it's $200 less even including overseas shipping.

Cameraquest is a great resource, and Voigtlander lenses are top notch. Most Zeiss lenses are actually manufactured BY Voigtlander, so they know their shit. Their own lenses are absolutely on par with Zeiss optics. Plus, they make some of the most outrageously exotic and cool lenses, like their 35 f/1.2 that was already mentioned, as well as the superwide 12mm (rectilinear) lens and these new chipped manual focus lenses. So awesome.

Both Zeiss- and Voigtlander-branded lenses are made in Japan at a factory owned by Cosina. And sadly, most of their exotic SLR lenses are discontinued.
