all these pictures have nice sharpness and colors and all. i really like the lighting in>>40440
and the look of>>40435
but then>>40433is pretty overdone and usually all come out the same.
>>40442is probably the least appealing to me out of this set. it kinda bland and stuff.

The lightning in>>40440was actually natural, the sun was hitting directly on her thus giving her that "holy" look. I took a series of photos before I could manage to make her look at the light, hah.

Yeah,>>40433is a bit overdone but I was doing that for this photography project about music and I took some pictures of a bunch of instruments and that was my favorite one.

Well there IS something wrong with>>40438, it's not perfectly aligned if you can say so, it's a bit tilted but oh well.

most are much too plain for my liking.
sure, the composition isn't all that bad in most shots.. but the subject matter bores me to death.
the angles used to excite me much either.
it's all a little too straight and proper if you know what i mean.

do you have any portrait shots? i'd love to see if you do

portrait shots? Hum, closest I have is this one.

Photos of animals can be artistic as well. But there has to be intent shown in there. Pictures that are like "my pets are cute. wanna see?" are not allowed.

The photos are technically well done, but creatively don't much interesting. As has been said, the subject matter is old hat, vanilla, as is presented in what seems like a pretty uninteresting fashion.>>40439and>>40440are the only two that interested me, and even then the composition is too plain to be more than decent.

Re: the portrait>>40553- background is far too distracting, and the overall composition is poor, centered right on his face and all, and the rest of his body in the corner of the frame like an afterthough. Too much of the photo is just background that adds nothing and detracts from your subject.

It seems like you've got decent technical ability and an eye to see interesting things, so keep on taking lots of photos and you'll definitely improve. Eventually you'll gain more awareness of the background and how to use it, and you'll start seeing more creative possibilities for framing a subject you like.

(OP) Wow, amazing quality. I'm thinking of buying that camera, the EOS 350D, I've had my eye on it for quite a while now. Are you happy with it?
>> Anonymous

Haha! What a coincidence, great shot in terms of originality, could have a little more light so we could tell better what's going on but looks great nevertheless.
>> Anonymous
>>40813
Yes, I'm still in the process of learning and most of the pictures I take are mainly "exercises" for improving. I'm flattered that you think they're technically well done because that's what I mainly aim for to be honest. I should find more creativity in my photos, I know, but sometimes I find it a bit hard.

The portrait was mostly a snapshot that I actually enjoyed cause of the emotion that was expressed in it, how I managed to capture him smiling/laughing without posing for the picture or anything, I just captured the moment and that was actually one of the first pictures I took with this camera I own,I was still on the process of "testing".

And yeah, practice makes perfect.

Thanks for your critique, much appreciated.

thank you. yeah, my camera is capable of much more but everything i want to shoot i have about 3 seconds to do it in and it's so hard for me to compose quickly enough.
also lack of tripod makes taking photos in bedroom in the wee hours of the morning when the sun's just starting to come up difficult also.

Any time, glad to have someone who actually listens to critiques and isn't a complete assclown.

The emotion in that shot is definitely great; it captures something about the personality of the person, especially if you know the person. Can't say for sure without seeing the original, but I'd think it would look better in color, as the B&W really harshens the dark background elements around his head.

I love your clarity and focus. This may seem a bit of a "Style" comment, as opposed to a photo critique, but your tones seem to be muted. Perhaps taking a little time to focus on color? Otherwise, I love your captures. You've got great skill.

run of the mill, freshmen at brooks institute make better work day one- your subjects are bland and over done, and the fact you shoot digital says something about any technical skill you have- i guess they're ok if you're looking to take photos 16 year old scene kids take. look at Eggleston, Larry Clark, Lauren Greenfield, Diane Arbus- do they take these pictures? No, they explore and try new things, you just emulate what you see on deviant art. Shoot some film and go see some art, then I'll respect you.
>> Anonymous
>>41133
His subjects are perfectly legitimate. How the hell is he going to get to take up-close pictures of anorexic girls or anything like that? He's a talented fellow with a camera, not a professional art photographer who can get grants to run off to whereever he wants to shoot whatever he wants.

Oh, and you said Larry Clark:

Looks a great deal like some of the pics the OP is making.

I can't believe this is still on the front page. This artfag is so desperate for comments.

Honestly, I must say that these photos hardly are masterpieces. They try to look good, but they just aren't.
They need some content. Close up of a coffee cup or a piano key just doesn't count. They just don't have that something which would make one want to look at the photos for a little while more.
Get some content.

I never said I'm an expert. My camera isn't even close to pro or anything like that and I only take photos as an hobby and am still in the process of learning and improving. True, I am still a noob in photography, thus me posting them here, in order to get some constructive critiques to improve. Don't know what you and>>41143are so pissed about, these are just pics I took experimentally. I'm no professional and never said I was one.
>> Anonymous
>>41147
I don't have the memory of anyone saying these pictures were masterpieces and I am pretty conscious they aren't. I wish.

As for the piano picture, I was taking pictures for this project I'm doing about music and I needed pictures of musical instruments, thus that picture and that other one of the inside of a piano.

And the coffee cup one was one of the first pictures I ever took with this camera and it was kind of to reflect the environment that exists around a coffee shop.

Thanks for your comment, I'll try to be more "original" in my pictures, if you can say so.

'Shoot some film'? You, my friend, need to get out of the 90's and realize that film is dying. Permanently. Whether you shoot film or digital has nothing to do with technical skill - actually, nowadays it just has to do with personal preference, and for a professional photographer digital is a lot more practical than film.
>> Anonymous
>>41150
lol@I didn't even notice the "shoot some film" part. Yeah, it's oh-so-leet shooting film instead of taking digital pictures. Oh please.
>> eku
>>41150

You, my friend, should stop trolling. Film isn't dying any time soon. The use of it might be decreasing, but it isn't dying.

What now is happening, is that most of the compact camera users just ditch film and buy digital camera. It's just more practical for them.
But those who have shoot with other than 135 film, are still going to use film. There just isn't any seriously taken alternative for them, yet.

*add your own yadayadayada about film versus digital here*
>> Anonymous
>>41156
Film is like LP. Some people will still use it, but it's big, hard to get by and not really providing better quality.
>> ac
>>41203
... unless you're talking about medium or large format film, which has a pretty obvious and striking increase in quality, especially at larger print sizes.

It's really difficult to make imaging sensors larger, thanks to silicon yield issues. We're going to have to find a fundamentally different way of doing things before we can start making sensors as big as a medium-format film frame, much less a 4x5" sheet. We've been having good luck making little APS-C and smaller sensors with higher resolution, but there's only so far we can go with that before the laws of physics kick in and start fucking us. Eventually we'll get photosites that are too small to reliably pick up photons. There's a reason the tiny sensors in point & shoot cameras have such high noise levels, you see.

A medium-format frame scanned at 4800dpi is equivalent to a roughly 128 megapixel digital camera. Good luck matching that quality with any digital camera costing less than a luxury car any time soon.

(I shoot mostly in digital with some film work for fun. But I've read enough, and worked with both media enough, to realize that the "lol ur a bad photomotographer kuz u dont use filmz0rz" idiots are just as big idiots as the "lol ur stuck in teh past cuz u still use film haha" idiots.)

The op's pictures are at a technical level really good. {s}he shows competency in at least composition skills in many of his/her photographs. I don't know about competency in operating a camera beyond an automatic program mode, but I'm assuming that (s)he has a basic idea of operation.

You have the basic technical skills that you'll need. Now you'll need experience: Photography is about freezing the natural world, capturing beauty and exposing truth. Your technical skill is really going to crunch down on you when you're out in the world, and you have about half a second to properly expose and frame THE perfect photograph.

My advice to you is to get out of the house and start pointing that lens at life. A group of people talking, the expression of someone's face when they're sitting with their friends, relating a fucking awesome story, is going to be worth a thousand of those piano shots.
