Hi guys, I was wondering if i could get a word of advice from you guys. I'm no way an expert photographer, I can barely hold a camera in fact, but I decide to start do some photography in my free time.

Looking around my area I found a Canon Powershot 650 that seemed good at around 200 $. Point is, I know very little about cameras. Is it a good piece of technology? Or am I wasting My money?

Pic realted; it's her.

Thanks in advance..

The game really has changed in the last two years. price points have dropped dramatically, to the point that there really is no reason to start out on a point and shoot.

save your money for a few weeks longer and opt for a cheap dslr. your pictures will come out much, much cleaner and with more photographic oomph,

for what you're getting, from an investment standpoint, 450 bucks for a dslr is a bargain compared to 200 bucks thrown away on a point n' shoot.

i ordered one, getting it tomorrow i hope ... but i tested it out in a shop and it looked good (bit heavy but doesnt really matter)

the screen is fucking imba too, you can turn it almost all the way around :)

and i was told it was one of the best of the powershot series (--> same lens as the G9 or something)

but who cares anyway, if your a beginner like me, any camera will do :)

Same lens *and* sensor as the G9. Other than the RAW ability and the hot shoe, I'd actually say that the A650's a better camera than the G9. It's my standard recommendation when someone wants a P&S.

but the g9's body is metal. does that account for anything

Meh. My little A95 (the camera that begat the A610/620, A630/640, and eventually the A650IS) got dropped on a pointy rock, got dented, survived. Then got dropped on pavement from pocket height and survived. They're sturdy little beasties.

You're better off going to websites with details and demos.

Half these fucks want you spending too much when you're a beginner, and other fucks want you using film devices that's going to wind up costing you money every time you develop.

Look up the model numbers you're interested in on google, and click and see what you find. Also Flickr has a great method of looking up images by camera type.

Asking questions here are like asking questions in /fit/ the answer is always "squatz!" no matter what you've asked.

While people shouldn't be suggesting over the OP's budget, there's no such thing as "spending too much when you're a beginner." If anything, people just starting out need better gear more than someone experienced. Why go for mediocre equipment if your budget allows something better?

How so?

The tilting screen, I guess. And it runs on normal batteries, which might be convenient some times. I can't really think of any other way in which it might be considered better.

The main reason I got a G7 instead of A650 was the size; thickness especially. The G7/G9 goes into a trouser pocket if it needs to, A650 doesn't. And if I'm going to be carrying a camera bag, I might as well put something better than a compact in it.

I'm a really, really big fan of the tilty screen. And the extra $150 that can be used on more interesting things...

Apparently I have significantly bigger pockets than you do.

Oh, that's right, I forgot about that.

I'd have to shoot with both of them to call it- only A-series I've touched (A790 or something like that) had some bad shutter lag, whereas the only G-series I've touched more than in a store (G2, I played with a G9 for about five seconds) had none.

If the A650 is better in the lag department than the A790, then yeah, you're definitely right.

(not op)
well i got it today, and i quite love it i must say... screen is amazing nice because of the tilting etc, video's are good quality and ofcourse, photo's are very good quality, alot of options, easy to understand menu ...well lets say i love it :)

its more than i wanted to spend in the first place, but i feel this is a good camera, which will last a while (can switch lenses etc)

i can recommend it,but it mostly depends on your budget&how pro you want to be really :)

Has it ever occured to you you're just fat and wear huge pants?

Or maybe you wear pants that are meant for guys twice your size, whigger.

While it's certainly true that I'm fat and wear huge pants, I still don't think the A650 is significantly less pocketable than the G9.
