I'm guessing that the variance there has more to do with motion of your camera, hand, and tree than it does to softness in the lens.Why not just google for a site that's already figured out the optimum aperture for your lens?
I'd say 5.6 but it's hard to tell. 8, 9 and 10 should be a lot sharper. Sure you don't have some camera shake going on?
