What to buy next? Anonymous
Ok /p/, got a question for you.

Am looking at doing a few shots for friends and local bands, start to get experience under my belt (all for free for the time being).

My current kit consists of;

Pentax K10D,
Pentax 18-55 Lens (stock),
Pentax 50mm f/1.4,
Crappy Flash Gun,

The question is, what do i need to invest in next if am going to be doing these shoots, and maybe some time in the future for money...

You may want to consider a longer zoom (say 55-200), or a proper flashgun for your K10D.

How close are you able to get to the bands and friends? Do you find yourself cropping and wishing that you had a longer zoom? These are questions you need to ask yourself.

You may also want to consider trying different flash techniques (aka not pointing the flash directly at the subject, but bouncing it off of a wall or reflective card), if you haven't already.

I haven't tryed defecting the flash much, or cropping, in honesty i make huge use of the 50mm as its my fave... I should try looking into this, cheers

You'd be surprised at the results of pointing the flash at about 45 degrees upwards, and using a piece of white cardboard (about 10-12 cm protruding from the top and about 5-10 cm wide at the tip) taped to the top of the flash. Works really really well. Catch is, is that you need to be fairly close (2-4 meters away give or take) for it to work properly.

And yes, the FA (assuming) 50 1.4 is great. I have one too, and it's never let me down.

Granted, I'm still using film (PZ-1P and a KX), but I hope to go to digital when I can afford it.

dont bother with zooms unless you can get the fastest ones available; i.e f/2.8!

otherwise all youll have is a bunch of noisy blurry shots.
this is all assuming your shooting bands playing gigs and not staged/studio like shots.

k10d here
kit lens
28-75 2.8
16mm fisheye
af540fgz
and 3 other generic speedlights with manual output controls
couple of studio strobes

next investment for me is a sigma 100-300 /4

totally depends on what you intend to be shooting OP, some bands like the fish eye look for their staged shots. For when they are performing a zoom is good as well. But a proper flash gun is also very important.

Thanks for the advice guys!!!

Buidling up a "to buy" list now!

If you like the 50mm, get a 85mm. Pentax makes some good ones.

yeah, depends what you shoot.
eg if you do landscapes, then a tripod will be a lot more helpful than a flashgun.

Just one word of caution: shop around for those 85s... They tend to go for rather high prices, as in $1000s from time to time.
