Ricoh GR Digital pics heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
FUCKING OMG, I'm really loving this Ricoh GR Digital. Just shot 100 photos or so before class today (I got it last night when I returned to Austin), here's a few straight out of the camera. All shot from the hip (until I get my viewfinder on wednesday), except for the first one, which was obviously a self-timer.

I still need to puzzle out the Snap focus mode, which is essentially hyperfocal on EZmode... this was done on Snap at f/5.6, I think, but the people in the back are kind of soft.

Regardless, the camera is fucking amazing. It handles so so very well, especially for a pocket camera. It's literally silent, and attracts ZERO attention from anyone. I felt like a ghost, in a good way. It was great.

28mm is going to take some getting used to, but I like it for street work. I'm starting to think that 21mm would be ludicrously, maybe unusably (except for certain cases) wide.

I think more than anything, if people notice me shooting with this camera, they're confused, because it looks so amateurish. I'm a-okay with that.

As I'm strolling, I usually get two photos of each scene I pass by... one approaching, one leaving. I just flip the camera around and shoot behind myself as I'm walking away. It works out better than I'd imagine. This was a walking-away picture.

And that's it for now, folks! I'd love to hear some comments.

I'm happy. $400 well spent.

is this a black and white camera or are you one of those B&W instant art guys

>>142267
i think bw is a pretty cool guy. eh takes great photos and doesn't afraid of anything.
>> Anonymous
The photos all have that sort of shot-from-the-hip meh, except>>142266, which is pretty good, and the Daily Texan shot, which is good for what it is. The foreground in the OP is too dark against the sunlit building, which draws too much attention away from the subject.

Can't wait to see what you're going to do with it once you get your viewfinder. Are you going to start using this for your PJ work, or just personal?

let's see the originals in color

It takes whatever, but I was shooting B&W jpegs. I like pretending I've got Tri-X loaded in there. I really really like how the jpegs come right out of the camera, and I like seeing them in black and white on the camera, so for me, there's not much of a point to shoot in color (except obviously if there's something great going on with the color in a scene.) These were taken during midmorning, and the light was less than fantastic for color work. I know I'm throwing away data, but it's a choice.
>>142330
Agreed on the shot-from-the-hip meh. This is maybe the second time I've really tried the whole stealth photography thing, so there's definitely room to grow. After seeing how this camera performs at ISO 1600, and how much great depth of field I get even with f/2.4, AND the fact that I can record names and titles via the voice recorder, I am DEFINITELY using this for my PJ work. I'll always bring it along, in any case.

>>142334
See above comment. Originals are black and white. And honestly, the color wasn't great, so why bother?

The OP picture kinda sucks, I just wanted something for facebook, lol.

First one is good, others suck ass. Excluding the first, these all lack engagement with the camera and have various severe compositional flaws. The lighting in all but the first is also pretty flat and boring. Engagement with the camera is a huge issue. Eye contact can make or break a photo, and if you're making a photo in which there won't be any eye contact, you have to make up for it in other ways. Just a random photo of someone staring off into space while walking down the street is rarely interesting.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>142467
Fair criticism, but can we agree that these are better test shots from a new camera than say, shit-on-my-desk? That's really all these are, test shots. Just wanted to give you fellas an idea of what this camera is capable of, and show that not all pocket cameras are awful.

>>142456
Cameras like this are quiet enough that if you can pre-set the focus, lift, compose, and bring it back down fast enough you're shooting stealth all the time. Get that down and you're set.

Next Alex Majoli?

Uhh, you just fell for some shameless copypasta.

And seriously, I don't see anything in these pictures that my old 3 megapixel minolta can't do with a little help from photoshop. It's kinda slow, though - Ricoh's Snap Focus idea seems really nifty.
>> Anonymous
>>142482
"Snap focus" is nothing new. It's just presetting the focus to the hyperfocal distance. Any lens with a manual focus scale can do it.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>142482
ahahaha... oh wow. Thanks.

To me, after the lens, it's the operation of the camera that matters the most. It's why I love my Nikons, and why I love this new camera. The lens is as good as it gets in the super-portable bracket, but it's the two wheels, the hotshoe viewfinder, the instant shutter response (when using Snap focus, anyways), and ... fuck, I could be one of those marketing agency forum plants for Ricoh/Nikon/whatever client, couldn't I? Yikes. Point is, this camera is balls out awesome.

And yes, I'm sending my portfolio to Magnum while living with my drug-addict friends in a squat. In case Majoli bites it, they could definitely use a spare. :D
>> Anonymous
>>142487
Yeah, but that doesn't work on 99% of digital compacts since they don't have manual focus at all.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>142487
Much easier with this camera though, ironically because of its small "shitty" sensor. Funny that a camera like this can have an advantage over an SLR.
>> Anonymous
>>142488
You live in a squat? Awesome.

>>142490
Yeah, I know. I'm the guy who suggested some other small sensor cameras to you in your first thread. I'll trade noise for depth of field any day, for most subjects.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>142491
Haha, no, but that's Majoli's story. He's kind of a badass, check out his bio. I read that one in Magnum Stories. Greaaaaat fucking coffeetable book.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
Hope this doesn't mean you're going to start being more stealthy with your shots in general. One of the things I've always admired about your photography is that you have the balls to go up and engage with people to get good shots.
>> Anonymous
>>142492
Wow. Reminds me a of Koudelka squatting in the Magnum offices or Harvey living in an artists-colony apartment building violating zoning laws that got shut down not for that but for an *illegal matzoh factory* in the basement. Do all Magnum photographers have weird living arrangements or something?

I'll have to check out that book, thanks.
>> Anonymous
>>142490
Well, to get DoF equivalent to your camera at f/4 on an APS-C DSLR, you'll need a 18mm lens set to f/11 (-3 stops of light). But on the other hand, an APS-C sensor has around 3 stops of noise advantage, so the image quality will be similar.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>142495
I had a response typed out, but I goofed and Safari ate it... in a nutshell: I don't think it will take anything away from my shooting style, simply add versatility to it. It's a new tool for my toolbox. :)
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>142520
So what's the shutter lag like on that? That's the main problem I've had with compacts...
>> Anonymous
>>142604
Not Heavyweather (obviously) but in any decent compact I've shot with, there's zero lag if it's manually focused. The slow contrast-detection autofocus used in compacts is what's responsible for how slow they are.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>142614
The ones I've used, even if prefocused, there's a noticeable lag between the full press of the shutter and the shot.

Granted, I haven't really much used any compact digital camera other than my old A95 since I got my SLR...
