Buy or borrow a good photo book of classic images. Do the same with a book on techniques. Preferably an old one so it doesn't talk about Photoshop for 50% or more of the book.

The Photo Book - Jeffrey Ian
This is by far the most useful book you'll ever own regarding photography. Its not a guide, its simply a collection of infamous and iconic photographers and their images.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Photo-Book-Jeffrey-Ian/dp/0714844888

from amazon:
The concept for this book is simple: 500 photographers, 500 pages. Arranged alphabetically, each of the photographers--from contemporary Dutch cameraman Hans Aarsman to mid-century New York shutterbug James Van Der Zee--gets a full, oversized page.

OP: is there a particular number of photos that yall try and shoot per day or is it more of a "when inspiration strikes you" kind of thing

Listen to these people, this is good advice. Look at other peoples work, figure out what you like about a picture and how they made it. Keep what they did in mind when you start shooting. You can build from there later.

Photoshop is your best your friend. Photoshop CS3 For Nature Photographers is an excellent book to learn shop.

Sometimes when inspiration strikes, but the best photos happen when you plan for them in advance and have the time set aside for you to do photography. Personally I try to go out to the mountains at least once a month. Lately I've been going every weekend.

It depends on what you like to shoot, but you'll usually get more out of it if you plan to go somewhere. Creates a lot more focus. Then again, a lot of people recommend setting a goal, like taking at least one picture every day; whether that involves going out of your way or not is up to you.

I'm fine with it but saying thing like

>Photoshop is your best your friend

to someone learning photography is just a no-no imo, in before ansel adams example, its a really stupid example.

Really man, I point him both directions he needs to go. Learn composition and photographic technique, and learn how to post process.

If he picks up the book or something similar he'll learn decent photoshoping and not that trendy garbage that plagues most beginning photographers.
