Question for /p/ from NOOB camp...

..if you get a 50mm 1.8 prime and a 28mm 1.8 prime would the 28mm give a better performance at 1.8 because of the wider angle glass?

The wider angle will make it a little more handholdable, but you'll get the exact same shutter speed with each.

Exactly. There is an advantage two ways:

1. If you stand in the same spot there will be less magnification, so the details will be smaller, and shake on them less apparent.
2. If you reframe so the subject is the same size, because of the difference in perspective, details in the background will still be smaller. The subject will obviously still face the same problems.

It's about magnification, in other words, not focal length. One is more magnified from the same spot, and brings the background closer.

thanks, why would it make it more hand holdable?

Excuse my photographic ignorance... i wanna learn!

The whole "1/focal length" shutter speed mantra came about because wides used to be smaller than standards which were smaller than teles. In the case of this 28/1.8 it's clearly not the case, so I don't think there'd be any handholding advantage.

why don't you buy all the sigma and nikon primes with all your money

you wouldn't have to ask yourself so many questions -___-
