Can anyone who knows a bit about Pentax/flashes help me out a bit?

I have a Vivitar 285 and a Pentax K100d. How do I get them synced/working with each other? As basic and simple as possible please, not much experience with external flashes.

This is a classic flash, if it's one of the older versions don't use it on the shoe without a safesync inbetween to drop the trigger voltage or you might fuck up your camera. Its thyristor tends to be very correct much of the time but I would probably get a daylight sync shoe for the flash and trigger it with your on-board flash. Using the vivitar on manual for perched-on-shelf bounced light or on-the-floor background fill.

Yeah, I read about that (Also read that it's a pretty decent old flash) and I'm too cautious to risk damage to my camera. Totally lost me with thyristor/daylight sync shoe though, guessing there's something I need to buy?

Any links to products would be appreciated.

thyristor is just its internal "auto" setting, there's a sensor on the flash that squelches the light when it thinks the image is properly exposed. Some flashes are very good at this, I haven't had any problems with the 283/285.
The syncshoe is just a little thing that you slide the flash on to, like your camera's hotshoe, and it has a sensor in the front. The sensor trips the flash when it detects the light from another flash. Daylight means the sun won't fool it. I imagine most are daylight without saying so these days.

Thanks a lot. Think I'll search around for a cheaper one than that though. ;)
