what? taking a photo like that? sure. you just need the right lens.
>> BurtGummer !!RRMHFHglFsy
you also have to be willing to get THAT close to a wasps arse.
>> Anonymous
unless you have a good zoom macro lens.
>> Anonymous
Most macro lenses won't get that close at all. I'll bet it was probably some sort of bellows attachment.

And the wasp was probably dead.
>> Anonymous
The mp65 would do it.

He wanted to put a watermark on it.... fine...

Why put it in a totaly black section where you could get rid of his warter mark perfectly in MS paint?

oh and yeah probably witha 40d, as long as you have a lense with a decent zoom macro lense, decent ones aren't cheap.

mpe-65 and the mt-24ex is the way to go! it's going to cost you though.

70-210 Micro-Nikkor, right? No need to qualify it with "one of" - it's unique.

it is the only *true* zoom macro lens made by anyone.

you don't need "zoom" macro. the zoom doesn't mean shit.

you need something to allow you to get a magnification ratio of 1:1 or closer.

you need extension tube(s), extension bellows, or at least reversing ring.

or you can do it the getto-ass way like some of the people above.

you can get good old-school Nikon bellows extensions on ebay for around a $100 or so. there's a few different kinds, so look around.

a standard 200mm bellows extension with a standard 55mm macro lens will get to about a 4:1 ratio, meaning you can magnify what you're photographing up to 4x its actually size (size of object on film/senor:actually object size).

there'll be some light fall-off, but you're shooting digital. so, adjust for it and/or bracket.

because that bellows doesn't have the connections, for the lens; youre going to need to use it with a lens that lets you manually change the aperture..

b&h sells one that has the connections, but it's a lot more than $33! (though it looks much better built)

And if you cannot manually change the apeture, not all is lost.

I don't know how damaging this is for the lens or the equipment, but a workaround is as follows :
1. Set your apeture on the camera with the lens (but no bellows) attached.
2. Press and hold the DOF preview button.
3. While holding the DOF preview button down, remove the lens.
Some lenses will stay at the apeture you set, I am not sure how many though.
The only drawback (apart from possible damaged equipment) is that you will still have to manually focus, and the viewfinder will be darker (making it harder to focus.)
I know the Canon EF-S 18-55mm kit lens and the older EF 35-80mm USM film lens retain their set apeture.
The rest of my lenses have manual apeture settings. (Plus I don't use bellows anyway, I am stuck with the reverse mount lens setup.)

Has anyone had problems with damaging their equipment this way?
'Cause I don't want to be responsible for someone going and damaging their camera or lenses...

Doesnt work on dynax mount lens because we have pro spring loaded apertures that return to fully closed (f22) when not attached. You need some blu-tack magic or so to keep them fully opened.

It's dead you idiot. If a wasp sticks his sting out it's basically suicide.

Info about the shot here:
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/671807

Model = Canon EOS-1D Mark II N
Exposure Time = 1/250"
F Number = F14
Exposure Program = Manual
ISO Speed Ratings = 100
Metering Mode = Spot
Flash = Flash fired, compulsory flash mode
Focal Length = 150mm + 3 Tubes + Reversed 50/1.8
Color Space = sRGB
Exposure Mode = Manual exposure
3 Flash units
Tripod
Mirror Lockup
Remote Shutter Release
24 Images stacked with CombineZM

So OP .. Yes, you can take shots like that with the 40D. Even higher magnifications are possible (compared to 35mm format) with little or no effort at all. You just need the right equipment :)

Woah, calm down Anonymous!

Yeah, the wasp can sting multiple times, and can be agressive, the bee only stings once, then dies a short while later, but generally isn't as agressive.

The other thing is that the wasp nor the bee usually doesn't attack unless aggrivated, so simply photographing one probably won't set it on the warpath to sting you, unless you begin to harass it.
However, it's always a good idea to be careful, unless you know for sure that you are not allergic to their stings, and are willing to get a few bites. :)

But you would be pretty hardcore to be willing to be bitten by a wasp - I know how much their sting HURTS! (Yeah, I know, I am a wuss...)

I've used this method with decent success in the past, however I just left the aperture at wide open.
Unfortunately, this left me with an incredibly tiny depth of field.

Hold it against the lens mount, backwards.
Focus and zoom is kind of a crapshoot, fiddle around to find what works.

Once the apeture is set and locked, you then affix the bellows (or extension rings) and take the photo with the new apeture!
