>>269322 This man speaks truth, tripods. Also, if you're on the very tail end of your battery, you can switch it off to get a few extra emergency shots, as it does use a moderate amount of juice. Lastly, if your IS/VR mechanism was botched and produced bad results, you could still use the lens without engaging it.
Still, I leave mine on all the time, only once have I shot without it to save juice and hand-held results were hit and miss to say the least
