All my experience with IS is in lenses - Canon IS lenses to be specific. I love IS, shooting 1/10 1/15 1/30 hand held was never easier.

For night time shots, low ISO, good noise reduction - Canon used to be leading this field but I'm so out of touch with gear whoring I don't have a fucking clue anymore.

I'd recommend doing a search here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp for cameras with IS, too lazy to list them all out. Canon's IS is only availble in the lenses for SLRs and adds a fair bit to the price, but avoids sensor noise and anything else you might get with image stabilisation, Nikon apparently has the same on their lenses under the name of Vibration Reduction.

Or just use a tripod, much cheaper :D

There are a few dslrs with sensor stabilization that work with any lens mounted on the camera, which are a cheaper alternative to having to buy lenses with them built in. These dslrs are the Minolta 5D/7D, Sony A100, Pentax K100D/K10D (along with the Samsung rebadges) and the Olympus E-510. But you'd probably want to use a tripod if you're taking pics of the night sky.

Can i recommend you buy a tripod if you don't have one. I've found the improvement you can get by buying a $50 tripod is much greater than that you'd get from upgrading from a mid range camera to a dslr for many situations.
