Sure there are. If you want to see metrics in action, the best thing to do would be to attend a local competition. Especially if it's at a smallish club rather than a gallery or conference. Experienced judges at small venues will almost always go through specific reasons why something is good or not. As well as mentioning their particular biases before or during the process. How important or creative a piece is almost always a seperate, hopefully equally weighted, scale during critique.
I think a lot of younger folks on interbutts haven't ever gone out and attended any of these kinds of things, so everyone is very obsessed with technical merit. Anyone who is even moderately interested in photography, as a hobby, even; I'd really suggest looking into local photography or art clubs/groups in your area.
