go buy yourself a used rebel xt from amazon for about 517 dollars *with* the kit lens.
The kit lens is very usable as long as you keep it at around f/5.6 and up. This means that it won't do too great in low light situations without flash, but it should be fine for quite a few shots.
Also buy yourself a 50mm 1.8 canon lens. This is a great lens that is very sharp from about 2.2 and up in my opinion. It's also incredibly cheap (about 85 bucks new) and very light.
On a cropped sensor such as the rebel xt it is a bit better for portraits and you won't get wide angles, but it is very sharp, takes good low light pictures, and won't cost you much.
Shoot around with those two lenses for awhile until you find what sort of photos you like taking the most of, and then try and find suitable lenses to fit your needs.
As a general rule of thumb you should go for the cheaper camera body until you have the lenses you need, and then upgrade the body from there.
