hey /p/, i guess i could try here in case someone could help me out with this.

i love bright, very saturated photos, but i don't know how to get mine to look the way i want.
i often visit this journal because i love the vivid colours she manages to get from her photos: http://hospitalrooms.livejournal.com/

what do i do to achieve it? surely it isn't just SATURATESATURATESATURATE in photoshop.

picture is one from her journal

OP,

She has a livejournal.
Why don't you just ask her?

I'm curious if it's just Photoshit or if she's actually using some kind of ZOMG MAGIC SATURATION LENZ & LIGHTING.

As for the lighting, I've gotten similar effects using a Canon 550EX bounced against a nearby wall and ceiling. I don't see the characteristic ring reflections in her eyes, so I think we can assume a ring flash wasn't used.

i don't think that flash can deliver this amount of light

there are 0 shadows in this picture

so why is JPG the recommended format for photos/images

is it just because they're smaller

because there is little difference visually between a jpeg and png but png has a much larger filesize. jpeg is only bad because if its the only copy you have and you save and resave it over and over, it turns into ass through compression.

Lossless compression ftl in this particular case. It's nigh-impossible to tell an 85% or 90% JPEG from a PNG visually, unless it's like a multiple-generation JPEG, but the JPEG will be significantly smaller. Also, JPEGs can have EXIF data.

She might be shooting with a camera that only does JPEG (or just shooting a camera on which she only shoots JPEG) and not want to add double-compression artifacts to her images, which I could understand. Though it's mostly a baseless fear if her original JPEGs are highest quality, unless she likes to save and reopen the file a lot.

Her bandwith, though. I use PNG because I've got an anal conceptual issue with the idea of lossless compression. My storage space, when I get around to making a website my bandwith, and my peace of my neurotic little mind.

OTOH, when I post a photograph to /p/, I use JPEG because of 4chan's bandwith issues.

Yeah, I always scan at 4800dpi and save even my most worthless shots as RAW for the same reason. Just so long as you realize that you're being irrational while doing so. ;)

I'm the opposite. Usually I half the image size from the camera (to about 1200 pixels wide) and then save the image in MSPaint which usually makes the photo about 100KB in the end.

Lawl, if it makes you feel better, the photos aren't worth space than that. They are mostly vacation snapshots.

op here, so we don't have a definitive answer?

see, look:

WHAT THE FLYING FUCK!
i think it's pretty silly how she blurs parts of the photo to give the appearance of a shallower depth of field, though.

i think its pretty clear she knows:

a)
how to use her camera and its settings.
b)
she knows how to use good lighting setups
c)
she knows how to post-process well.

thats probably how she does it judging by a quick look at her shots and r.e comments from others.

I don't like it very much. But it's nice and smoothly done. She lights with external lights and use photoshop as well. You faggots that only brag about gear all day long in /p/ wouldn't understand.
Also, even not liking very much, her sister is fucking hot. fucking nice thights geez.

HAHA! Oh wow.
I don't know if I'd be happy with blowing out that much detail through oversaturation.
