generic crap p&s photo is generic and crap.

SERIOUSLY.

It's not bad, but it's hazy and a touch dull. The eye isn't drawn to anything or along any lines. It's just there.

OP here. that's all in camera quality right there. my camera is shit. you can read the specs. but i think with a little photoshop or something i could make it a lot clearer, increase the contrast some, and bring out the ridge in the front some.

I can believe you, but I think you should give your idea a shot and see how it goes. You'd be surprised what you can massage out of a compact. They aren't hopeless by any means.

Sup. I fagged it up a bit.

Generally there's a ton of shit you can do, although each of them on its own seem tiny and pretty insignificant thing to do, by doing them all in one run it gets things all pretty like.

Such as, burning and dodging for instance.

Here I just fucked around with the channels, burnt int he sky, dodged the background, levels, etc. Easy stuff.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
try doing a panorama or something a plain 4:3 image is pretty boring for landscape esp with your relativly long lense.
>> Anonymous
>>91192

Very true. A lot of the good (landscape) photographers love to dodge and burn and play with the image.

>>91193

True, some kind of pano view maybe by stitching would have been nicer. It's not too shabby for someone starting off.

Some good tips and advice in this thread, OP.

Is this the "make your own edit of OP's pic" thread?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>91230
>>91229

your skies are way to washed out here and it detracts from the color of the rock and ends up dulling out the whole picture. In this case, it looks like you were facing the sun too directly-if you can, wait until a better time when the sun isn't so overhead. Color of the rock is good, just need a better sky. (this is, of course, just my opinion).

Best time to shoot photos are early in the morning 7am-11am, then again starting a 3pm-sunset.

You've really killed the sky on this edit. You don't really need to brighten it, just a slight increase in contrast will help cut a lot of that haze.
Avoiding blowing out the sky in a landscape is something I had to work with on a recent vacation, and it required really fine tuning the exposure, to save sky detail but not darken the ground too much. It's difficult at the wrong time of day. Pic related, I lightened up the ground a little in post, but as you can see I still lost some detail in the sky. And that's one of the better ones, I had a bunch more that still weren't quite salvagable.

the sky is still burnt out ;-)
>> elf_man !fBgo7jDjms
>>91458
Right. That's what I'm saying, about the wrong time of day. It's a pain in the ass and unless you opt for HDR or a graduated neutral density filter, there isn't much you can do, except what for better conditions, which isn't always an option.

OP here. I edited the second picture that I posted a bit more, brought out the sky some more, and played around with the color levels, and I got this. The original is earlier in this thread. Again, comments/suggestions?

sky still hurts the eyes, but that's much better in terms of everything else! I'd actually recommend cropping the shot about a quarter of an inch above the rock, so you have a bit of sky in there but it's not overwhelming.

You really don't need to brighten the sky more than the original. Actually, darkening it helps bring out the detail.
And whatever you did to the color looks weird. Think subtle.

OP here. I like the sky in that one, but the rock formations in your are a little dark. The main focus of the photo was the rocks, not the sky. I like the idea of cropping the sky, because that takes out the distraction and brings the viewers eyes to where they're supposed to be.
>> elf_man !fBgo7jDjms
>>91500
Eh, that was a five minute edit and my pp skills are limited. But the original is so overexposed and hazy, you're fighting a losing battle with overall image quality anyways.
