/p/ need your advice... Anonymous
hey /p/ i've been saving up for a canon dSLR, a couple months back when i started saving the 350D caught my eye, great reviews, etc...

but i also read some improvements upon the release of the 400D...

i have like $600 saved so, lol...

so my question is do i:
a. buy the 350D and buy a second lens(a 50 maybe? i hear good things bout that)
b.buy the 400D with an additional 2 megapixels and other features.

OR

c. wait for the 450D (spot metering, FTW!)

d. Wait for the 450, then buy the 400 (which should drop to the 350's current price when it comes out)

something interesting seems to be going on...

on the /p/ page i see the response or update to the page, but it seems when i go into the thread itself, the responses aren't there, or the page isn't updated...what. the. hell.

holy-shit what just happened!? you fixed it!! what the hell was that!?
>> Anonymous
I would buy the 450D, because of its bigger viewfinder.
>> Anonymous
>>131441

hmmm, interesting idea here...i heard though the 400D drains it's battery quicker? is this true?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>131491
Dunno. I've never used a 350D extensively. But I know the battery in my 400D usually lasts me over a week per charge if I don't go on a major shooting spree. I've never drained a full battery in one day, regardless of how much I've shot.
>> Anonymous
>>131491

Who cares? Battery grip is a must have anyways.

+ you wont manage to drain the 400D battery in a day of shooting. Probably not in two days either.
>> Anonymous
>>131438
You might also want to look for pentax k10d.
>> Anonymous
>>131492
what does a major shooting spree entail?

>>131493
how much do those cost?
>> Anonymous
I don't know ac's definition of major shooting spree but I can get over 800 shots out of 2 batteries using the battery grip.

LCD screen is on at all times, with the default autosleep setting, some reviewing, zero flash use and IS on on my lens. The battery meter still displays a full battery.

I only have 2 4GB cards so I don't really know the limit since my cards are full after 800 RAWs. But I'm sure there's still a lot of juice left.

-----

Check on Amazon for the grip. There's the genuine Canon one you can get with the accessory kit or the third party ones.

The accessory kit comes with a bag, the grip, a battery and a UV filter (lawl) so it's kind of worth it. Then again, the third party ones throw in batteries too.

I heard the Canon consumer bodies use smaller capacity lithium batteries than their equivalent Nikons, not sure if that's true, but just thought I'd throw that out there...

For comparison, I once shot a fashion show with my D50. Over 900 JPEG images in one night, and I had a quarter charge left by the end of the night. No flash and very minimal image review, btw.

720 mAh vs. 1000 mAh

But hey, I can autofocus with my 50mm. Am I right or am I right?
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>131520
So... can I? You're thinking of the D40.
>> Anonymous
Except they don't make the D50 anymore.

Yeah.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>131522
What the fuck does that matter? I was just offering an anecdotal comparison on battery life.

Multiple hundreds of pictures. Most days I only take a few tens of pictures unless I go out specifically planning to shoot a crapload.

Why is it a must?
>> Macheath !8b4g0BkNZg
>>131615
Not a must, but probably one of the more useful things to have since it makes the camera easier to hold.
>> Anonymous
>>131620easier to hold

vertical controls
double battery life
better balance for long lenses
looks like a mini 1d
>> Anonymous
>>131622
Also makes the camera larger, heavier, and more expensive. Once you get over the mini 1d virtual penis get then you'll figure out vertical grips just get in the way most of the time and serve no real purpose.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>131625
I agree with you, until you start wielding the 70-200 or 80-200 f/2.8 pro zooms. Canon or Nikon, it makes taking verticals with those lenses much, much, much easier, and the whole package balances better.

I'd say that when you start into the telephoto range, a vertical grip is damn, damn nice.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>131625
I dunno. There have been a lot of times when I've felt that I could get a much more stable grip on my camera in portrait orientation in a low-light situation if I hadn't needed to use the standard shutter release... And the added weight gives you an inertia-assist, too. So it probably gives you some measurable fraction of a stop more handholdability.

Of course, I don't own one and have no plans to buy one, so this is pure speculation.

600g lense, full sized heavy flash, portrait style.

You take photos like that for 3hrs without breaking your wrist or nose (i rest my flash on my nose to take some of the weight!)

you must have a really fucked up face if your nose is near your flash when the camera is vertical

Portrait orientation, right eye to viewfinder. Makes sense.. She might have a fucked up face, but that post isn't necessarily an indication of such.

i just picked up my camera and put the flash on, looked with my right eye

my nose isn't anywhere near the flash

Works with my camera and flash, although it's uncomfortable as hell. Might be better with an Alpha and whatever weird-ass Minolta flash she uses.

Is putting such heavy glass on the XTi's plastic body really wise?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

In b4 shot of original Digital Rebel with gimassive L supertele attached.

The outer body is plastic, but the frame and the mount are quite sturdy enough to support any lens Canon makes.

uh, body is made of plastic

but frame and mount are steel

no problem using 70-200 2.8 IS on it handheld

you need a tripod ring for bigger lenses

I think my RAW converter pulls out a few extra pixels that the camera's internal one doesn't. Like maybe it interpolates a bit further at the edges or something. I dunno. I've noticed previously that JPEGs straight out of the camera have slightly different edges than JPEGs I've generated from RAW.
