soo, I bought a Nikon D200. went digital because I'll have to shoot digital at the world scouting jamboree this summer, where I'm one of 3 photographers my country sends. 2.5 weeks, +40 000 people. I was going to buy digital sometime anyhow.

I bought it last saturday. didn't post directly to save you from shitty test photos ;)

with a 50mm f/1.2 the body crops most of the light falloff wide open. 75mm is a bit longer then the 50mm I'm used to, so the first day I was cursing non-stop because I always had to take a few steps back. in the end manual focus works out pretty well on it.

Nice, they all seem just a little underexposed, though.
I like

best.
I find the tamron adaptall 28mm f/2.5, outside of being a bit slow, makes a good normal lens on my D70. On your d200, you'd actually be able to meter with it! It's cheap, too! :3

a little underexposed? maybe, i'm still figuring out the metering with digital. on my film i can meter off skin/clothes easily, digital is trickier.

have another photo I like. I won't post all my stuff to 4chan though, and we all know why

I'm playing around with macro and strobes too, fun stuff. this is taken with ceiling bounce flash, and a sheet of paper right above the lens to diffuse the light and avoid a bright reflection. should try a polariser for that too

I always bracket if I'm not sure.
What does the D200 offer with AI lenses anyway, 60/40, 80/20 or just spot?

hrm... Are you setting the max aperture for your AI lenses?
"Maximum Lens Aperture f/1.0" is in the EXIF
That might be funkdifying your metering, dunno

I attended the national scouting jamboree back in 2001. Yeah, only national but there were still people from various other countries. It was an interesting experience, but it rained a bunch so my feet were constantly wet. I ended up having a toenail separate from my toe, true story. Anyway, looking back, I wish I had had some photography equipment back then. I was only 13 then though, so I didn't have my thing for photography yet. Get some good pictars and show us. OR DIE.

It would be wise to invest in a battery pack for the D200, especially if you plan on shooting alot. The D200 can tond to be a battery hog.
>> Teus !QbSstcPD6U
>>38692
yeah, I promise I'll post photos when I'm on location : )

>>38695
well, I think I can shoot a whole day with one battery. I could get a cheap battery pack for it, but couldn't afford it. I'll just recharge often, I need to take breaks anyway to copy my CF card to my laptop. let's just hope my battery doesn't go bad o:
>> Teus !QbSstcPD6U
>>38659
oops, forgot about this one.

i can meter spot or center-weighted (center-weighted adjustable to X mm). only matrix metering doesn't work.
yes, I set lens data, otherwise light metering would be off. strange the EXIF doesn't include the maximal lens aperture correctly

>> Teus !QbSstcPD6U
>>38888
yeah it's great. i love how it's built up

>>38886
let's see: center-weighted goes from 6 to 13mm, and also has an "average option" like the oldschool center-weighted metering on the old nikons. I'm glad I've got spot metering, but I heard matrix metering usually works great on nikon... even (some) pros use it all the time
>> sorcery! des
>>38902
Sometimes I kick to matrix on my N90s and it's usually not far off what I would pick... and that's an oldternet version, the new ones are supposedly made of win and god.
Colour Matrix metering seems like crazy voodoo to me. I haven't had a chance to play with a body that has it though. hm, I thought only the F5/6s and the D1/2s had it, but a quick googling says the D200 has it, too.
>> Teus !QbSstcPD6U
>>38906
yeah, but it doesn't work with older AI lenses :(

#13 If maximum aperture is specified using Non-CPU Lens Data option in shooting menu, aperture value will be displayed in viewfinder and control panel.
#14 Can be used only if lens focal length and maximum aperture are specified using Non-CPU Lens Data option in shooting menu. Use spot or center-weighted metering if desired results are not achieved.
#15 For improved precision, specify lens focal length and maximum aperture using Non-CPU Lens Data option in shooting menu.

OOPS. looks like matrix metering IS supported <3

>>38996
You should check out one of them! I was kind of put-off by the mostly-aged population of my local club but they're mostly fun. A lot of old folk are a lot hipper than you'd think.

Look at it this way, you might score some slick deals if anybody is unloading their stuff. :3
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>39001

I've no doubt about the hippness. Older guys are tons of fun (i'm female) and very sweet.

I did check out my local one. Everything was all photo manipulated and sliced together, there wasn't an unphotoshopped/spliced picture in the bunch. With pretty bad, low-quality photography. I just couldn't stay in there. It was driving me nuts.

I'm so sorry OP. I just cant' resist. To be on topic, I really like the 3rd pool table photograph. It's different than what I normally am used to and I like that. I will agree that most of them look underexposed-- but that's probably a product of the weather. Congratulations on both the event and the new camera. What lens have you been using?

the rest was taken in M mode, usually with spot metering, which works out pretty well. I should try shooting some action on matrix metering.

>>fun photography clubs around here that isn't full of senior citizens.
I get along greatly with some 40-55-60 year old photographers. they're usually well experienced, and we can have some really interesting discussions. I know my tech pretty well, they're more experienced but I'm more kind of innovative
>> Teus !QbSstcPD6U
>>Everything was all photo manipulated and sliced together
Awwww. I know a guy that shot years on film, now he's all "zomg photoshop" and he sucks. photoshop can fix some things, but I dont overly postprocess or fake photos. needless to say, I hate most advertising and commercial photography

>>I've no doubt about the hippness. Older guys are tons of fun (i'm female) and very sweet.
hahaha, cute. they probably love teaching you.

>>I really like the 3rd pool table photograph. It's different than what I normally am used to and I like that
thanks. just like my mind and personality, my eye also often wanders off sometimes (or pretty damn often). often I like it myself, sometimes it appeals the public

lens was a 50mm f/1.2. damn bright. recently I'm using the micro-nikkor 55mm f/3.5 a lot, not so bright, but damn sharp. and versatile when you want to get up close in portraits
>> des
>>39003
Heh, yeah, you should try to find one that was a camera club before digital photography :P

There's very little of that at our's, but we do have a "creative" category for it; that might keep that kind of output down.
