Hey

Been experimenting with Tungsten lighting & portraiture recently. What do you think of these? Still learning on how to pose the subjects & whatnot.

Have the model keep her chin up, it eliminates the shadow underneath, and makes her neck look longer.

Also, tell her to shave her goddamn arms.
>> Anonymous
A reflector low down to shine up into her face is good for shadows and flattering.

>Also, tell her to shave her goddamn arms.
heh.

yeah I wish I done something along these lines. I only had an hour to take them, so was sorta in a rush :/ - Messed up quite a few things. Especially shadows on the face.

Also, have another

Remember that reflectors can be made cheaply and easily in a pinch. Tin foil or white cards and so on.

Boring, blurry, shitty composition and ugly blown highlights.
>> Anonymous
lighting looks horrible and unnatural
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH
yeah, I'm not to happy with it.
The lights I was using had no power controls; other than on/off.
Although I was aiming for a blown white background.

Thanks.

it isn't too bad for an early attempt. think about balancing your lighting and using reflectors or more lights were needed. you'll get there if you put in the effort.

thanks.
Learning all the time, so all is good.
I'll post a few photos later, that I took using Studio flashes. Think i've balanced the light in them pretty well. I'll let you be the judge, i'm useless at finding errors in my own shots.

Also, hers another from the same day. But of a different person. (god knows why she had that makeup on..)

Its not the best photo in the world, blurry also. But I quite like the angle & general look of the subject. I'm aware that it would suck as a portrait aha.

It's nicely composed but the lighting destroys it.
Try something more dramatic.
>> ilkore !!rybbb5OcRVp
>>289023
you probably already know this... but, when you double the distance between subject and light source, you loose one stop, and when you cut the distance in half, you gain one stop of light.
>> soulr !lK4GD5SleY
oh wow the arm hair, it totally destroys the picture more than the bad lighting and bad model pose, I just cant take arm hair in those amounts, I'm really picky about it sorry, and no I'm not virgin or lonely.

Thats the Inverse-square law right? I know its got a name like that or something :p

>>289048
tell me about it :|
Although, i thought the lighting was -ok-. *shrug*

the lighting is not that bad, but there is room for improvement
>> Anonymous
Well-done technically but boring shit. I don't get why people try to imitate Avedon's blank backgrounds and flat lighting so directly; it'd be like if a bunch of painters decided to do their eyes just like Modigliani did his. It takes a fuckload of talent to pull out something worthwhile from just a person standing there.

Oh, and arm hair is awesome.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
I like these shots. Possibly just because I think the model's hot, though.

(As long they're not as hairy as my gorilla arms, I'm fine with a bit of hair)
>> Anonymous
You people have horribly low standards if you can't see something wrong with this lighting.

This looks like some "Get your photo printed for $5" shops at the mall lighting. It's ugly as fuck.

why are you shooting JPG? is RAW too pro for you?
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH

Shot in raw. (.NEF) converted to jpg for display.
Sorry i'm so pro for you.

why do you lie?
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH
>>289083
Thanks. I agree with you; although she is a little too hairy.

>>289097
Sorry you didn't like it. Could you point out whats wrong with it? Maybe suggest some sort of improvements? I'm learning still. hardly an expert yet
>> Anonymous
this looks like shit.

and it's obviously an amateur attempt at lighting. It has no direction, it has no style, it has no purpose. available light would've probably looked better than this

It just looks like LET'S THROW AS MUCH LIGHT AS POSSIBLE ON THE SUBJECT TO LIGHT IT AND TAKE A PICTURE.

if i got these as my first shots using $50 home depo lights and my image counter was in the hundreds, i would be pretty happy. i hope you get to see how awful these are after you know how to control your light. a lot of people never get past this stage and somehow manage to sell shit like this

I don't know, I'm not digging the harsh direct lighting here. This may sound idioting, but could've you bounced it off of something?
