Ok /p/ im going to get a new cam I am quite a noob but I have done a lot of research and I have taken photo classes back in the day. Im thinking of ether the Canon Powershot s5 or possibly the Rebel xt Im looking for a lot of manual control, good low light shooting with natural light, and high MP because I intend on using it for art related reasons and mixed media. I feel that if im going to spend 500 on the s5 I might as well save a little more for a decent SLR for more flexibly down the road. What do you guys think?

Get an SLR. Perhaps a D40x or XTi, since you probably want 10MP. Maybe even the A100. The K10D is probably a bit more expensive.

Yeah, save up for the SLR.

There is effectively no image quality difference between the XT and the XTi. The XTi has more pixels, but the per-pixel quality on the XT is better. It averages out. The XTi just gives you larger files. I'd bet a nickel the same goes for the D40 vs. D40x--Nikon only came out with the D40x because they needed to be able to slap a 'Y' in the "10MP" feature comparison sheet.

Additionally, he can pick up a used XT for $500 right now rather than saving up.

Yeah, I'm not a big megapixel guy either (have a D40), but the OP said he wanted "high MP." Personally, I love not having to deal with huge images and file sizes.

With the Canon S5 IS going for $450-$500, why bother? A D40 goes for a little more (as low as $524, maybe less), barely weighs more, and is superior to a S5.

Yep. Which marks him as the sort of person who doesn't really understand the relationship between image quality and pixel count, which is why I felt the need to drop some science on him.
