I use canon, and I really like using canon, so I'm just going to give you some advice. about canon.
if you're a total dslr beginner, really, go for the gateway dslr.
You'll get better faster with less options and a few more limitations, and you'll be able to make amazing pictures anyways.
Get yourself a rebel xt. Pro's use it as their back up camera, it's good, light, and most importantly, cheap.
Buy yourself the 50 1.8 prime, and maybe... I don't know, the 28-105 (but the older one with the viewfinder window).
you should be able to find the 50 1.8 for under 100 dollars (american) new, and the 28-105 for pretty cheap used.
Both are quite decent stopped down one or two stops from the lowest.
Yeah, really, start that way.
And if you *really* want to go the nikon path, do the same thing. Cheapest body possible, go for the lenses, then when you have all the lenses you want, upgrade the body if you want to/can afford to.
