Adjust your black point, your tonal range is a bit fucked. No pure black. I rather like the image though.

Could you explain to me how to do this? I'm rather "play around and see what works" with Photoshop settings.

If it makes any difference, this was originally a color photograph, and I still have the original file. The color was distracting, so I removed it, and played with some settings in Photoshop because it didn't look quite right with just the color removed. (Open > Reduce Noise > Channel Mixer 1 Layer (I also desaturated during this step > Flatten Image > Brightness/Contrast > Curves > Brightness/Contrast.)

It was about 2 minutes in Gimp, more than half of which was finding the levels tool since I never use it. Looking at it again, yeah, it's pretty bad. Here's another try.

Well I think if I'm going to insult you in your attempts to help this fellow then I should try my hand at it. ;)

OP here, thank you. I like this one.

Would you mind if I used it, and/or telling me what steps you used to fix the tonal range in the future?

Foul! Overuse of unsharp mask! Minus 2 points!

Didn't use UM

Over compressed JPG then? The grain looks really fuzzy.
