Hi, what would you recommend for a good camera that's betwen a point-and-shoot and a DSLR? Right now, I'm using a Sony DSC-L1, and it takes poor pictures in low-light conditions (too noisy).

I'd like to have something better, but not quite ready for something like a Canon 30D or something. Maybe something at the $500 (or less) range? Pic related.

the Fuji S9500 is an excellent bridge camera, with a 35mm film equivalent 28-300mm coverage zoom, and at wide angle an aperture of f/2.8. Thats an expensive combination on a digital SLR.

I bought a pentax *ist DL2 for about £300 (google says UK£ 300 = 562.71 US$) but that was with a lens giving 28-80mm coverage at f/3.5 at wide angle.

THe fuji also has excellent macro.

An SLR will beat it for noise levels at any given ISO, detail (given the image is in sharp focus and the slr has similar megapixels (6 and 9 arent that far apart in practice)) and expandability. A dedicated fixed focal length macro lens will beat the macro of the fuji easily.

All that said, i do still sometimes miss my f7000 (the 9500's predecessor)

Used Rebel XT? Perfectly fine camera, $500-550 WITH kit lens, if bought from the idiots running out to replace their XT with an XTi.

Anyone buying a 30D needs to be shot- they should buy a 20D used or an XTi instead, and wait until Canon actually does something INTERESTING with the semipro line, other than "slap a new badge on".

It should be a BIG danger sign that the rebel now has more megapixels than the semipro camera. I (and a few friends) are guessing the 30D and 5D will be merged in spring 2007, since they haven't touched the 5D quite some time. Like...maybe a 12mpixel 1.2-1.3 crop, or a full frame 10mpixel, etc. Maybe they'll go bonkers and put the 1Ds sensor in the 5DMk2...but expect it to be full of all sorts of retarded and annoying limitations so they don't endanger their 1DsMk2 sales.

D50 can't beat that for value atm. If u can save, go the D70s, but I'm surprised how much is packed into the D50 for the price.

Fuji S9500 is good choice if you really don't want a DSLR, but I too think that you should get D50.

What are you talking about ? Basically D50 and D70 are the same. Only significant difference is kit lens and marketing.
