Is there a way to use a digital camera as a webcam?

They're being written as digital files though, they're an in-between sort of thing.

What are you guys talking about? Of course you can use a motion picture film camera as a webcam. All you need is the right type of scanner and a little patience. Did you school give you ANY character education?

*HDV*

true HD has too high of a bitrate for DV tapes.

also, op it really depends camera to camera. im assuming you mean a still digital camera.

a digital camcorder should work as a webcam with no problem.

This all depends if it allows a direct link (ala usb drive style/or "camera" style) connection and if you can find a decent webcam program to abuse that. You have the camera automatically take photos at a set interval (you might need an external programmable shutter control) and then have the program use/delete said photo in broadcast. This is really only useful for HIGH quality webcam broadcast for security (when lacking a real video camera) or time lapse reasons (when understanding why you would want to do it this way instead of making a video from the still frames).

It's been done. You can do it too! But adding to the shutter actuations on a SLR isn't recommended.

I'm a bit iffy about shooting HD on DV tapes... As another anon said, the bitrate is too high. If you're gonna be shooting HD, why not go all out and get something with internal/external memory. Plus it makes capturing so much easier.
