assuming your shooting with pentax?

do they have a fast 50mm? i.e 1.8 or 1.4? if so, get that, if not, the macro.

at least it has 2 uses 1)macro 2)general use whereas the pancake is just a pancake general and with no doubt lesser image quality...

you can use pretty much any lens for all around photography. you just have to walk back more with a longer lens.

get whatever lens is fastest and cheapest. that's the 50 1.8, and also the 50 1.4.

Digital or film? I don't think either of those is suitable for all-around on digital; both are too long, the 40mm is better, though. 40mm is still better for film, IMO, but normal focal length is a matter of taste. Lots of people love the classic fifty, and for good reason.

If it's digital, get something inbetween 28 and 35. Pentax makes a 31mm pancake prime.

I got a 50mm f1.8 for ma pentax for about 30 dollars with shipping, its manual focus but oh well, something new to get good at. It can be too long occasionally indoors, but nothing that can't be cured by stepping back.

pictures I posted in>>130337are with the f1.8

you can find 28mm f2.8s for about 30 bucks too
