/p/, I need some advice. I have a D40 with kit lens now and would like to upgrade to another SLR. I have held off buying lenses for the D40 because I have some reservations about it. Mainly - the lack of primes and a lot less lenses to choose from as well as having a tiny viewfinder.

Now I'd like to upgrade to something else - ideally I would like to go with a new body, a walkaround superzoom lens and a 50mm prime. What would be my options as far as this? Should I look into Sony's A700? Or Canon's 40D? Or maybe stick with an older Nikon body like a D80?

This isn't another "what camera should I buy" thread but more of a "what system should I be buying into" affair. Appreciate the feedback in advance.

they're all good. no one makes a bad camera. some systems are more expensive than others, but for what you mentioned, they should all be within a hundred bucks of each other.

if you're just starting out, though, i wouldn't bother with getting married to a system. fools rush in, as it were.

you could also go with a d50 or d70/d70s

If you've already got a D40, you've already bought into the Nikon system. There's no good reason to switch to something else. The problems you're complaining about are D40-specific, not Nikon-specific.

Pentax K10D!

I'd go with the Canon 40D or Nikon D300 otherwise. The D40/D40X feels like a toy to me and it doesn't take older Nikon lenses.
