If I remember correctly, its best if you have a lower angle when your trying to give the feeling of following the trail. Also, doesn't a longer focal length condense everything so the trail, even being farther out, feels close in relation to the beginning of the trail? I think that would have helped too.

I'd like to see more of the sky and the mountain / less sand and rocks... like, say, 2/3 sand and rocks would be great. The trail doesn't really do anything to me.

It does, but it's a long and boring journey and the payoff at the end isn't that great.

Which sounds more flippant than I mean it. Just that the rocks and... more rocks aren't that exciting, and they're taking up the vast majority of your photo. The mountains and clouds in the background are kinda pretty, but there's a lot of dull gray/brown dirt to slog through before you get up there.
