you don't really want constructive criticism, do you? these are out of focus party pictures taken by some guy who just bought his first camera.

it's already art! hang onto these for 14 years, put them in sequence and make it a series. call it "the folly of youth: past memories hazily remembered."

Beer pong fucking sucks.

You want to temporarily cripple your mind? Just grab a bottle of wine and have at it. Don't throw up all this spectacle about it; you're flicking an off switch on your brain and putting a timer on it. Either face up to that or don't do it.

Missed focus a bit. And I'm guessing (and EXIF seems to back me up) that this was taken with your onboard flash, which is rarely a good idea. Wasn't too bad in this particular case (the translucence of the beer cups meant you don't have the ass-ugly shadows of normal flash shots) but it still gave you some really flat looking light.

Composition is not bad, but also not that exciting. I.e., you didn't fall into the newbie traps of just centering things dead on, and have a reasonably nice interplay of graphic elements there (although it'd be a lot better without the beer logos on the cups), but you also didn't do anything that makes me want to keep looking at the picture for more time than it takes to criticize it.

Suggestion for next time: Get down at the level of the beer cups and take a picture of the person serving the ball towards you. Would make for a much more dramatic shot, if you can figure out a way to light it properly--you're going to need to use some EXTREM FAST SHUTTER SPEED, and I still don't think you should use your on-camera flash as primary. One idea would be to go get an external flash (even like a cheap $20 one from the bargain bin at your local Ritz) and a Wein peanut slave trigger ($20 from any reputable dealer) and use the on-camera flash to trigger the bigger flash from a side. Unfortunately, I don't think the SD1000 has any manual exposure options (correct me if I'm wrong), so it might be tricky to get it to meter that scene with the flash properly.

I'm guessing this is you, given the "I'm holding my camera out at arm's length in an elevator" look it has? If so, you're hot. Take more self portraits. If not, your model's hot, take more portraits of her. But next time, these pictures should be taken somewhere that has enough light that you don't have quite so much motion blur, and somewhere that makes for a better background than a vaguely reflective brushed aluminum wall.

The model (be it you or someone else) has a good expression on her face, but the boring clothes kind of ruin it for me, too. The whole thing just has a sort of myspace self portrait feel to it.

(Oh, and if it is you, get a tripod and learn to use your self timer. Tripods are another thing you can get for around $20. Some people will tell you to get one of the really nice $100+ tripods, but that's really not that useful for your level of photographic expertise to do nothing more than hold 125g worth of camera)
