pre-emptive tl;dr: if you want to be a commercial, portrait or wedding photographer, just buy some strobes, a few how-to books and you're good. no school necessary.
if you want to pursue journalism or fine art, you NEED a degree.
/p/ is full of hobbyists armed with digital rebels and a passing interest in photography. very few of them have actually committed to taking more than an introductory course. take any advice they give you about going to school with a big grain of salt. yeah, photography's competitive, but thousands of people graduate and become successful every year. it's only going to be more competitive if you don't have a degree.
having said all that, i would say go for it. why the fuck not? just avoid private schools like brooks, accd, etc. they're insanely expensive and a degree from one of them doesn't mean any more than one from a state school with a prestigious photo program.
