Sigma 50mm 1.4 = $500 USD Anonymous
ruh roh

A good $200 over the Nikon, Pentax and Canon 50mm 1.4.

WWJD?
>> Anonymous
What bullshit.

And "J" is for "Jim Nachtwey," who uses the Canon 50/1.4 as one of his main lenses, next to the 16-35L.

At this price, it's really aimed at the D40/D60 fags who have nothing else to buy.

For $500, you can buy a 28mm AND a 50mm and still get change.

"modern" lens design

HSM with FTM

better than the canon at 1.4 (supposedly)

Are you really saying the Canon, Nikkor, or Pentax 50/1.4s are going to have worse build quality than the Sigma?

>>196164
The Canon gets a bad rap, but it's fine even at f/1.4. Besides, as a general rule, one doesn't bitch at f/1.4.

well.. notice i didn't say anything about how the canon 50/1.4 is

i said the sigma would be better (supposedly)
>> Anonymous
>>196151

well considering that the canon/pentax/nikon 50/1.4s are a couple of years old, then this probably has a better build quality. (new materials and all) and this is probably a lens with a built-in motor, so this is probably aimed at the d40fags.

not on the Sigma it isn't...it's like having a toy car strapped to the front of your camera. but whatever. It gets the job done and cost about half of Canon's IS lenses...

bear in mind that this is the inital price and probably matches the MSRP given by sigma.

ill bet that once all of the dealers get this lens itll come down to the more realistic street price which will probably be in line with the curent offerings.

give it a few months to get any problems sorted and the price to settle and ill be getting one of these, i love 50mm so i want the best one i can get :D

man im looking forward to this new 50mm, even on a canon :DDD
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
Eh...50mm on FF, perhaps. It's just too long for me.

Now, the 30mm 1.4...that I want. Just trying to pull together/justify the $460 it'd cost me (and that's with a cost+10% discount...fucking Canada). I played around with it in the shop, and on an XSi the autofocus is flawless. I guess that "high-precision center focus point on f/2.8 or faster lenses" really works.
>> Anonymous
>>196251
i can give you my vote for the 30mm :D
its a nice match to the aformentioned 50 on a crop body.

it has that sweet spot from wide open and stopped down its really nice.

one thing i dont like about it is the weight/shape, its very choad like lol and tips the camera forward a bit when its just resting round your neck...

It's likely a USM micromotor like some of Canon's cheaper lenses—the motor is ultrasonic, but it isn't a ring motor, so there are still gears (hence the "toy car" noise).
>> Anonymous
>>196265
lol no, sigma's new HSM is like canon's ring motors.
my 30 is as quiet, but not as fast as the 85mm
id expect the same from the new 50, though i doubt itll be as fast as even canon's "micro USM" on their 50mm...

>>196238not on the Sigma it isn't...it's like having a toy car strapped to the front of your camera. but whatever

Uh, have you EVER used a Sigma lens with HSM?

It's the same damn thing as Canon's USM. Not your shitty ass micro USM but a true ring motor.

Fast, silent and accurate.

>>196238It gets the job done and cost about half of Canon's IS lenses...

I don't even know what that statement means.

Buy your shit from the US. Even after shipping and taxes, it will be cheaper than buying locally.

When you bring optical stabilization in a talk about focusing motors. Yes, it is hard to understand.

the nikon, pentax, sony, canon 50mm gives equivalent of 75/80mm on crop cameras

the sigma 50mm gives equivalent of 75/80mm on crop cameras

the sigma 30mm gives equivalent of 45/48mm on crop cameras

the sigma 30mm CANNOT be used on full frame/film without massive/unusable vignetting

the sigma 50mm CAN be used on full frame/film with no vignetting

the sigma 50mm is made using modern coatings and design

the nikon, pentax, sony, canon 50mm are old and classic designs from the 80s

the sigma 50mm DOES NOT HAVE optical stabilization

doesn't this have something to do with the image circle? and not affect the coverage? I vaguely remember someone posting a pic of this explaining the different terminologies related.

ONCE AND FOR ALL

you HAVE to apply crop factor on ANY lenses you use if you are using a CROP sensor

it does NOT matter if they are "designed for digital" or "digital only", you HAVE to apply crop factor
>> TheGeneral !m7n7x2Yyfo
>>196802
>>196798
both true. guide to sigma terminologies

ASP (Aspherical Lens)
The aspherical lens complex allows freedom of design, improved performance, a reduced number of component lenses and a compact size.

APO (APO Lens)
In order to attain the highest quality images, the APO lens has been made using special low-dispersion (SLD) glass and is designed to minimize color aberration.

OS (Optical Stabilizer) Function
This function utilizes a built-in mechanism that compensates for camera shake. It dramatically expands photographic possibilities by alleviating camera movement when shooting by hand held camera.

HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor)
This lens uses a motor driven by ultrasonic waves to provide a quiet, highspeed AF.

RF (Rear Focus)
This lens is equipped with a system that moves the rear lens group for highspeed , silent focusing.

IF (Inner Focus)
To ensure stability in focusing, this lens moves the inner lens group or groups without changing the lens' physical length.

Conv (APO Teleconverter EX)
This lens can be used with the APO Teleconverter EX. It can increase the focal length and will interface with the camera's AE (automatic exposure) function.

EX (EX Lens)
The exterior of this lens is EX-finished to denote the superior build and optical quality, and to enhance its appearance.

DG (DG Lens)
These are large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras whilst retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.

DC (DC Lens)
These are special lenses designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital SLR cameras. Their specialized design gives these lenses the ideal properties for digital cameras, the compact and lightweight construction is an added bonus ! including compact and lightweight construction.

>> sage !QPQnHoZHMk
>>197004wait. so what do sigma brand the lenses that do conform to crop standards with?

if it has DC in the name, it's FOR CROP ONLY

like the Sigma 30mm 1.4

that does NOT mean you are getting 30mm equivalent, you are getting 30 x "crop factor" = 45 or 48mm

the Sigma 50mm 1.4 is DG, doesn't mean anything except that it's got ninja coatings that are "modern" for digital cameras

on a full frame/film camera, it gives you 50mm

on a crop camera, it gives you 75 or 80mm
