hey /p/

I know nothing about photography, but have always loved taking pictures, and stuff. I just got a check back from college, and have about 1500 to spend. I'm planning on taking some photography classes next semester, but want to have at least a little experience before I take the classes. I'm going to Europe next month, and would love to take pictures there.

Whats a good startup camera, for a complete n00b? Also, any good tutorials on different effects, and stuff like that?

Thanks!

uh....

where do i start?

i guess google photography techniques, try reading books; i hear understanding exposure is good, though never read it.

go to a camera store and try them out.
personally i wouldnt go anything other than canon or nikon, 4/3rds and sony just havent impressed me yet and are lacking the longevity that canikon currently has regarding AF, mounting and general lens selection.
disclaimer: yes i know you can mount minolta lenses on a sony, but its hardly worth it compared to the current canikon lens selection just to save a few $...

as i shoot canon ill suggest something like a 20 or 30D
theyre a good sized body, have a lot of good specs, will produce great images when used properly and it has a great selection of canon EF/EF-s lenses to go from.
im sure you could also go with nikon and have the same attributes, i just dont know specifically what camera would match the 30D....
also, dont buy into the megapixuls argument, more is generally never better so getting a new camera just cos it has more is pointless...
hope that helps ya'

OP here, it did. Thanks! Any good websites you'd recommend?

There's also the Nikon D80 which might get replaced soon so watch out. You could also go for a Canon entry level and spend the rest of your money on lenses which is actually a better idea.

You should go with a film slr camera.

Something from either pentax, canon, or nikon. pretty much anything you can get for under $100 that isn't broken should be fine.

I with nikon, you can get a nikon fm with a 50mm lens from ebay for about $100 + shipping, nikkormats are cheap as fuck, if you want something barebones. I only own nikon cameras, so I cant talk for any other brands. you shouldnt worry too much about brand though, because most classic slr cameras are pretty much the same thing anyway.

I suggest a point and shoot if you are new to photography. They are easy to use so you can work on your style and composition without worrying about the settings. They are cheap and by the time you are ready to upgrade, DSLRs will be improved and cheaper.

if your new to photography thats going to suck duck not having that, and then having to pay out the ass for it.

0/10

Your class may require a film SLR, but I'm not going to pretend that going digital won't be a lot more convenient. If I were you I'd get a Canon 400D or Nikon D80.
