I just bought this lens.

Dunno what will I use it for, but it's so monstrously awesome.

Kinda hard carrying this five kilogram thing around with a broken arm, so for now just shooting random shit out of my window.
Shooting with a 1000mm/f5.6 (equiv.) is fun, but manual focusing with this thing is hard. I think I need to upgrade my Olympus E500 to E510.

500mm, f/5.6 ain't bad for a catadioptric design!
>> Anonymous
I paid $290 for it. Since it's fixed aperture, it comes with a set of filters, an extremely poorly made lens cap and a huge metal lens hood you can probably kill people with.
>> Anonymous
is that a 1000mm?
serious? and its that fucking small?
what kind of mount is it?
>> Anonymous
>>50234

500mm on 2X crop Olympus 4/3 system = 1000mm.

It's a mirror (catadioptric) lens, hence the fixed aperture.
>> ac
>>50234
See the little knobbly thing sticking out the front of the lens? That's a mirror. What this lens does is the light goes in around that, bounces off a mirror in the back, bounces off the mirror in the front, and finally goes into the camera. It's a quick and easy way to cram a lot of millimeters into a small space. The downside, however, is that you're stuck at a fixed aperture (I.e., it's always f/5.6. Never f/4, never f/8, always f/5.6) and you lose some optical quality in all the bouncing, and your bokeh is (arguably) ugly as sin.

This optical design is used a lot for telescopes, but not as often for cameras because of the aforementioned aperture and quality issues. However, they're way cheaper and smaller than the big-ass equivalents with better optical quality and more than one available aperture.

Oh, it's one of THOSE lenses.

Saw one of these on Amazon a few months back. It comes with a 2x extender, making it 2600 max. At 1.6 crop, that's 4160mm. Too bad the aperture sucks, the build quality sucks, actually, the overall quality of the lens sucks.
>> Anonymous
>>50261

Not quite, that's a really cheapass refractive lens, the OP's is a less cheap reflex lens. Different systems entirely, I'd say the reflex will give much better results.
>> Anonymous
While these lenses are great as they are they have two annoying flaws.

1) They have only one apature as pointed out previously, which limits you to one depth of field selection and one shutter speed for your shot. This means you will almost be gaurenteed to have to use your tripod.
2) When you zoom in really close on your picture, instead of being composed of circles like normal its composed of rings.

>>50246
Trees don't allow me to make a good shot of the moon out of my window. I'll try going outdoors at night sometime later when my arm heals.

>>50408
1) Shooting without a tripod with any 1000mm manual focus lens is for masochists anyway. Regarding the fixed aperture, they bundle a few neutral filters with the lens to deal with bright sunlight, but the shallow depth-of-field is really a problem.
2) The donut-shaped bokeh is weird, but this isn't a portrait lens, so I think it's tolerable.
>> Anonymous
>>50261
The build quality of the OP lens is far from stellar, but it's perfectly usable. The bundled accessories, on the other hand, are much worse - the lens cap in particular.

Would you happen to have an example picture of this phenomenon?

OP here. Finally went outside with the lens. The weather was hazy, so I couldn't get sharp shots of really distant objects, but here are a few things I shot from the river bank.

That's a nice pic. It's nice when your foreground is lit by nice bright sunlight when there's a dark background.

100% crop of the same image, no post-processing except level/contrast adjustment. Quite sharp for a lens this cheap (and a CCD this small).

The haze was annoying. This image required a lot of contrast/color enhancement in photoshop, but still far from perfect.

And the last one. This is just for reference since it looks like a cellphone photo, but it's the best I could do for now (haze again). This power plant is about 10 kilometers across the bay from the shooting point.

That's not bad at all for a mirror lens. it seems about on par with an average 70-300mm zoom. I've seen much worse mirrors. That f/5.6 aperture is definitely better than most cheap f/8 mirrors out there, too.

>>50253
Note that that's an f8 model. Op's is 5.6

I'd prob. get one if I could get a cheap f5.6 500mm. I wouldn't use it for too much: prob just some landscape stuff and maybe moon pictures. It's a neat lens to have though.

That's what the Russian lenses are about: Decent optics for a low price. Everything else is meh - inconsistent build quality, no AF, ugly as sin packaging, choice of mount limited to M42 or sometimes Pentax K, etc. etc.

pic slightly related (an insane experimental 500mm/f3.5 lens. I wonder how much it weighed...)
