film is only too expensive if you're making it too expensive.
are you having them print the slides, or mount them? get the film developed, few bucks a roll. uncut. cut it yourself, get sleeves, put them in there.
get a 200$ epson film scanner or pay a small price for web-quality scans.
it'll be less money in the long run than spending money on a shitty dslr, only using it to try to emulate a shitty lomography look, and upgrading all the time because you're unsatisfied with the camera.
i'm all for dslrs, but it seems stupid to buy one if you're going to use it to take such shitty photos, if you really want them to look like shit, just get a cheap point and shoot and fuck up the lens.
also, cross processing is retarded. it makes film look bad.
