I have a Rebel XT with the kit lens, 18-55mm.

When indoors, how do I take a 'freeze frame' photo without using flash?

By freeze frame, I mean for example someone jumping and I want the photo I take to show him crystal clear. See picture for what I mean, except indoors.

youll need pretty good lighting indoors. and boost your iso. and a fast lens.

OP here, forgot to say:

I used the shutter priority mode at 1600 ISO and put it at something like 1/125 or 1/150 but the pictures just came out nearly black.

Take ISO 100, 1/200s and a lot of light.

it's going to be near impossible to do it indoors.

your best bets are to shoot, say 250 @ 4.5/5.6/whatever your fastest aperture, iso 1600 and shoot in raw. you can try to shop it afterwards.

your other option is to set up strobes for ceiling bounce, this'll give the impression of natural lighting.

>>82702is right. use a flash. and bounce it off the ceiling, or the wall behind you. don't have a flash? go get one. they're one of the better purchases you can make, better than a new lens in most cases.

i'll repeat that.

use a flash.

use. a. flash.

OP here, I reviewed a couple of the pictures I took. The ones using P mode, because my own settings didn't give me any decent pictures, mostly had the following settings:

1/50 at 4.0 and ISO 1600, while the person moving was crisp, the background was generally darker than I wanted.

I can't use a flash, it's a video shoot.

Will the 50mm 1.8 lens fare any better?

not enough to make shit sharp. if it's going to be a video shoot then why dont the asshats with the fucking video cameras have flood lights?

We're not running a very tight ship here. ;_;

Only have light from the windows.

Do I get the Speedlite 220 or 430?

Oh screw the 220. It doesn't even swivel.

Yes, the faster a lens you can get, the better off you'll be. The 50/1.8 is 2 1/3 stops faster than f/4. So that means that instead of your ISO 1600 shutter speed being 1/50th, it'll be around 1/200th.

I don't know how well the Rebel pushes (stands up to being brightened in post-processing) at ISO 1600, but you can find out. Shoot a few underexposed test shots at ISO 1600, open the raw files, and slide the "exposure" slider up. That should give you a little bit more light, if it can take it at that ISO without getting too noisy.

So long as you can get a faster lens, you're not "fucked" at all. If you can't, just ask the people in the video shoot to do their stuff over again for the still camera, and use a flash. I'm assuming this is a music video or something equally non-spontaneous; going through the motions once more for the still camera shouldn't be a problem at all.

Okay, no flash. Your options are to increase the bejeezus out of the ISO and widen the bejeezus out of your aperture. So:

1. Get a different body. The Rebel XT with its ISO1600 max isn't gonna cut it. You need either a film body and some extremely fast film (think Delta 3200) or a high-end, full-frame digital body (1ds Mk III, Nikon D3, or a Canon 5D).
2. Get a better lens. Even if the 18-55 would work on a full-frame body, it's way too slow. Think 50mm f/1.2
3. Go get some more lights.

All of these things can be rented.

If you don't have the budget to rent such things, then throw up your hands in disgust and tell the people doing the video that they're going to have to accept that there will be flash.

Also, shit's gonna be grainy as hell because of the high ISO you'll be forced to use. Nothing I can do about that.

I love you.
