okay so next month we're going to burma for a month to visit the extended family and have a walk around as a tourist. i'll be taking my nikon d40 and a laptop with me.

1. what are general things to consider, and other things i should take with me? i'm not sure if i'll have internet access all the time, so it's unlikely i'll be able to upload the photos to somewhere safe. should i invest in an extra battery?

2. i've also been wanting to get into film. saw what i think is an old nikon F3 or FM2(not sure which) body for the equiv. of $90USD with the current exchange rate. it wont work with my d40 kit lens and 2nd hand nikon prime lenses seem to be impossible to find. and rangefinders are not only rare, but uber expensive. any suggestions in terms or cameras/lenses i should look out for? i want them to be interchangeable with my d40 :(

some useless info about my current kit:
nikon d40
18-55mm/3.5-5.6 kit lens
1 CPL filter
2 GB Scandisk ultraII SD
1 lens pen :P
all in a EX 140 lowepro bag \:D/

pic unrelated, maybe.

Don't leave anything in the hotel if you are staying in one. I know someone who spent ages over in the middle east filming a documentary and ended up being robbed and lost all their footage, lawl.

If you have anything with a name brand or that looks expensive, try to ruin its image. Make it look scabby and horrible by putting stickers on it. Cover up the name, or even better, replace the name with a fake generic or cheap sounding one. Anything to avoid it looking like a prime target.

Invest in several! keep them in a water tight plastic bag in the bottom of your pack, and keep one on you.

Why? If your wanting to start film, just get a K1000, there cheap as hell, and a beautiful camera, fully manual, its what films all about, if you dont want to invest in a light meter use your D40 to meter for it.

For your walk abouts go for HP5 400, its a beautiful film, pack some Delta 3200 in case you go out at night.

You will need more space, in a new place you will be wanting to shoot everything you see! keep track of what your shooting, and rember composition at all times!

well i was hoping to keep to nikon cameras so i can use lenses interchangeably with my d40. my younger sister has a canon n80, but it feels incredibly flimsy and i don't feel comfortable taking it around.

will probably be staying with relatives mostly, and i really think burma is less dangerous than where i currently live - south africa. also it will be really damn hot there so i'll be walking around in sandals, shorts and a vest which won't attract attention. i'm just worried the authoritarian government there has gone more apeshit crazy since i was last there in 2000. don't wanna run into trouble...

Don't take pictures of police or military personnel or facilities if you're not certain of the reaction or have permission. You might just piss someone off. Don't make any rude comments about the government either. It's a dodgy shithole, really. Act accordingly.

Just take batteries and memory cards.
Everything else is surplus.
I had a D70 and went round Costa Rica and Nicaragua for three months a couple of years ago.
I went three weeks at a time between having access to anything like electricity.
I had about five batteries and about 4gb of memory, on a 6mp camera you probably won't need more than that.
If you do, you need to work on shooting less crap.
If you're going to have your laptop then just take two cf cards. (I've personally never had any media card fail on me but if one does it's best to have a backup). Transfer them to your laptop when you can, and burn those to a dvd every now and then. That way you can free up your cards, and backup as you go.
Not sure how safe Burma is, I take my camera with me most places and don't worry about a bag or anything, I just wrap the strap three times round my wrist and keep it in my hand the whole time. That way if someone tries to take it it's damned near impossible for them torip it out your hand.
Unless they have a knife and cut your arm off.
Just don't worry about all the stuff.

tl;dr

Gear is surplus, just take a camera and a lens and you'll focus more on the photos.
Make backups, take spare batteries.

My mom's family is from Burma, and I've visited twice. Be as careful as possible, don't take pictures of any officials, regardless of whether you have permission or not. Bring back pics of balachaung.

Take a gun with you and shoot the leaders and officials with that. LIBERATE BURMA. FOR /p/! FOR FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

i would love to but i'll be staying clear of the new capital. i hear it's almost like north korea there. however as a tradition i have to be robed(be a monk) for a week at a monastery. i just hope no riots happen while im there and they've stopped persecuting monks.

would love to try out the cliched "third-world street photography" thing as well though.
