how do you shoot in low light /p/?

the only source of light are colored spotlights, and the subjects are moving...

a flash is on the cam obviously, and pic related coz that's the flash...

what settings do you use in lowlight /p/?

If you want to retain the colored lighting, get the fastest lens you can afford and try to shoot without flash (and with manual WB).

the colored lightning is not needed...it's just they were the lights being used, how do you set up your manual settings when using flash? i tried changing the flash exposure compensation and it came out horrible...

In bullshit lighting situations you have a coupla options, but I would never use the flash directly mounted on the camera. Get a cable mount and hand hold your flash and point it at shit for bouncing... If I use flash (rare) I use a light modification box on it also, this gives you a nice even light on the subject..

extrem fast shutter speed obviously

What are you shooting, exactly? Saying "how do you shoot in low light" is like saying "how do you shoot in broad daylight?" The answers you'll get will be very vague, general rules that don't always hold out: "use flash, drag the shutter," "Sunny Sixteen!" Etc.

Preset WB is for people who don't shoot RAW.
RAW is the way to go!

actually done shooting actually, but i run into this kind of shoot a lot...

the situation is this:
i do a lot of photo coverage for the events of a certain dance troupe here in my place, now they are very talented and they get asked to dance all over the place. The problem with this is that usually the light being provided for their event is unpredictable, sometimes i get good lights, other times just downright awful...

anyway they usually present during the night, and in the past i paid no mind to how bad direct flash looks, so long as i took pictures of their dance, you know what noobs usually do. But lately i feel there is a better way to shoot their routines.

there's the situation /p/ what do you advice?

one of the techniques ive heard to make a light defuser is to get a bottle of rubbing alcohol and cut the bottom of it off and affix it to your flash gun. As a club shooter, i sympathize, sometimes the ambient light makes for some lucky catches though. pic related(to the last part)

Here's some quick and dirty pix of my flash setup. Works really well, and I don't need to have some expensive bullshit flash either. Basically with a light modification box you want to set your flash manually one stop lower than your camera. So for example if I'm shooting at F5.6 at 1/125, then I'll set my flash to F8.0. This is only for if Im pointing the flash directly at the subject though. If I'm doing bouncing all bets are off and you can just do whatever you want...

Use a really low Aperture Like 1.4 or 2.8
thats what they use In Live music Photography as most venues have a No flash rule
