Newfag here, how do you guys recommend I start learning photography? Right now I just go outside whenever I'm bored and take photos with a Powershit A430, but they're just photos of things, as opposed to photography. Ways to learn about focus, exposure, all the basics of big boys' cameras without having to buy one (poor high school student FTL)would be awesome. Results will be posted at a later date.

Added is an example of my bad photos. I have decent subjects around me because I live in the country, just not the skills or knowledge to take advantage of them.

Thanks for taking the time to respond by the way, I appreciate it.

Umm, I had a look at the JB Hifi website and all the kits they offered were $1000+, I didn't really think there would be such a disparity between them to be honest. Camera depreciation FTL by the looks of it?

I know this is probably an extremely stupid question, but I feel compelled to ask it anyway; would I be able to use lenses from the SLRs we have (not sure what brand they are, I can find out tomorrow though) with a modern DSLR? I'm aware that a large chunk of the price associated with cameras is buying lenses themselves for different situations.

probably not unless they are older nikon lenses/slr bodies and you can afford a new nikon d-dlr

you mention jb-hifi, are you nz or aus btw?

I'm an Ausfag too, so it's alright, lol. The only issue with that suggestion is that none of the cameras are actually mine. I'm lazy and jobless but my birthday is in a couple days, we'll see how much cash I get then. =D

well fuckin oztralians! ;)
(kiwifag here :P)

seriously, have a scrounge round ebay.com.au and youll be able to find a 300D with a kit lens for probably less than what you payed for the a430...

remember it doesnt all happen overnight, ive only just finished getting all the lenses ive wanted and it took prob ~3+1/2 years~

used the 300D as my first body and its a great stepping stone to something like a 20D/30D(that i have now)

I'll just keep my eyes open and wait for some monies, I 'spose. Until then I'll just try playing with the few manual features on the Powershot and on the weekend I'll have a go with an old SLR. Thanks for the help Kiwifag-Anon. <3

Not true. Nikon's backward compatibility sucks unless you get an expensive (Dxxx) level camera. But Nikon lenses work great on Canon DSLRs (beats me why), and Pentax lenses play nice on Canon and Pentax DSLRs. You may also have success with Olympus and M42 lenses.

But really just keep using your Powershot. It's great.
