Sup /p/

I'm an amateur band photographer. I goto local gigs and get snaps of the bands playing, but I reckon I could do better other than a 6-megapixel digital camera

Can anyone recommend a cheap (lets say under $1000) dSLR that does great of band photography?

Picture related, it's one of my favorite shots I took.

I cant help but feel your a troll

If its megapixels your after, go for a Mamiya 645 AFDII with a Phase1 Back.
>> sage sage
i agree wholeheartedly. we get like 10 threads like this A WEEK. d40 if you're such a poorfag. xTi for AF. whatever pick one you like.

also there is no such thing as a dSLR that is specialized for band photography.

I don't have a big issue about the megapixels to be honest, but it's the battery power that it drains. I also get intimidated by the 14 year olds who have their dad's big dSLR while a gig is playing.

I completely fail to see what's bad about OP's camera. It seems like it has plenty of teh megapielz?

>I also get intimidated by the 14 year olds who have their dad's big dSLR while a gig is playing.
I can relate to that, even though I have a D80 which isnt to small - When I'm at a gig and there are other photog's I instantly feel under threat. Although 9 times outa' 10, its usually my photos that come out trumps.

From what i've seen of your work so far, you've got nothing to feel intimidated about. Just because their gear is better, doesnt mean they're gunna choose the right angles and whatnot to get the photo.

>but it's the battery power that it drains
Although this may not be the best reccomendation; I find the Nikon D80 with 18-135 kit lens very good for shooting live gigs. You can go wide, as well as close up on their faces.

I often find that I can shoot about 600 photos, filling up my cards and still having some battery life left at the end.

The 18-135 kit lens is slow, 3.5-5.6; but you can always buy an upgrade - as I will be doing soon.

>Pic related, its from a gig last weekend. Not the best, but you can read the exif and see it was a D80 etc.

Not OP, but somewhat related. I'd like to start doing concert photography. Have a d80 and a tokina 11-16. Will that work ok? If not, what do you recomend I get?

>>198780
Do you always just use the 50mm 1.8? How do you like it?
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
>>198877
50mm 1.8s are so cheap you can't afford not to have one!

Canon XT + 85mm f/1.8 and/or 50mm f/1.8(mk I, not the shitty plastic piece of shit, ebay is great, I got a heavily used, but still good copy for 150 bucks).

>>198901
hey what's the difference between the mkI and the mkII 50/1.8s?>
>> Anonymous
>>198919

metal mount and distance window

both are optically equal

enjoy paying 200% of the price for a used lens
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
>>198919
mk1 has a metal mount and a distance scale. Also has an actual focus ring. It's pretty much the same build as the 35mm f2. Same optics though.

MKI has a metal mount, and is generally built more solid. The MKII is all plastic, flimsy, shorter and isn't built nearly as solid. I've heard many accounts of it simply falling apart. The optics are pretty much the same, but the the MKI just feels and performs like a better lens. I've used it for stage photography, and it works pretty good. Hunts in low-light, but most sub $1000 lenses do (and even then, it's hard to find good low-light performers). It certainly takes practice, but if you are staying a certain distance, it's best to use manual focus, and manual exposure when doing stage photography, unless you're doing flash photography which is a whole other issue. Getting the MKII is alright, but don't expect it to last you forever. It's worth it for the extra cash to get an older copy, which retain their resell value quite well.

>>198961

It's not the same, I think. One has a USM and the other does not. The one $19.99 posted is the f1.4.

Isn't the one in the other photo a 50mm 1.8 MK I? I could be mistaken though, but I think I see 1.8 and I don't see the USM markings on it.

he still gets 3/10 for thinking he was wrong

>>198979
yup, first 50mm is 50 f/1.8 MKI where-as the second pic is 50mm f/1.4 "USM"

compleeeeetly different lenses.
