honestly don't buy the D40, the cheap price might seem nice, I had one then only a few months later realised how shitty it is.

If only I realised in the first place and saved a little longer to get a better camera I wouldn't have had to waster loads more than I should have on a new D80 now.

Don't listen to the gearheads. Get the D40

Don't listen to the gearheads, you only need a decent point and shoot to make good pictures.

get a film rangefinder with some decent manual controls.

I've had the D40 for close to a year now. Good. Not great. But for the price, it's hard to argue with.
Theres obvious annoyances, like the no AF on some lenses thing, but if money is tight, it's alright.
I only plan on upgrading when I can afford something in the D300, D3 range. None of this DX cropping nonsense.

What cheap lens besides the 50mm could you possibly want? And LOL, MANUAL FOCUSING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

I wish high end cameras' viewfinders had microprisms like in the old days.

I've got a D40 and it is a pretty great camera for the price. If you are on a tight budget and want to get seriously into photography and be digital, you are better off with a D80 because you can buy cheaper, better lenses that will autofocus and the D80's current prices are a steal. Also the D80 offers quicker control.

I have borrowed the 50mm 1.8 and it has no autofocus and the screen + my fucked diopter settings make it damn hard to focus and the focus confirmation dot says it is in focus a lot of the times when it is not.

Pic related, it's Manual focus and ISO 800 pushed more than 1 stop. I still find it usable for a lol shot.. no resize for gear thread.

OP, try to get Nikon D50 + Nikkor 50mm/1.8 + SB-28DX. That's everything you would need for next 2-3 years.

lolwat thats for film get the SB600/800
>> Anonymous
Hey OP forget the D40, D50, D60, D70, D80, D90. Do you want to make pictures like a pro?

Do yourself a favour and get the stellar D100.

It's a class by itself.

It's built in automatic mode works wonders... and it's dirt cheap.

anywho
yes. get the d40. I have one, and I love it.
>> Anonymous
>>281658
faggot, the viewfinder does suck
it work fine for auto focusing, but put any lens on there that doesn't manually focus and see how piss poor it is
>> Anonymous
i was gunna get omne of those but the dealer said that the lens mechanism has an error and niot all lenses will work in it
or summin like that... but i would say get canon 450D you can get them on ebay (with lens) from about 250 - 300 pounds
and it will last ytou since its a higher than begginer level camera
>> Anonymous
Use automatic mode to take snapshots. Use any of the manual modes to learn photography.
>> Anonymous
>>281658

No, as a nikonfag, I can honestly tell you that the D40 viewfinder is true fail.
>> Anonymous
manual focus is down to you not the camera, cope with the smaller viewfinder, it will only make you better when it comes to doing it with a larger viewfinder.
>> SAGE
>>281779
what the shit are you smoking? keep trolling, and compare to even the cheapest worst flm SLR viewfinder, chinon or something. the fact is that the d40 doesnt even compare.

there are better options. at least find a used model that has the AF drive. that way you can use tamron lenses etc.

>> SAGE
>>281797
get a old one that has less megapixels.
>> Anonymous

no AF motor and a small viewfinder

vs.

used (abused), bigger, heavier, less megapicksels, shittier cpu, shittier sensor, etc

I think D40 is a good choice anyway. If you're starting photography 18-55mm, 55-200mm VR and later sigma 30mm/1.4 is all you need.
