Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

I'm poor (well too poor to blow big money on a lens at the moment) and heading to South America for a holiday soon. I currently only have my kit lens (18-55), and I'd like something with a little bit more reach and better IQ.

The local shop has this lens for ~300, would this be a good buy? I'm trying to decide between this, and a second hand 28-135IS for roughly the same price.

Absolutely not on the 24-85.

The 28-135 might be okay depending on what version it is. It wouldn't be nearly as wide as your 18-55 though. Would that be a problem?

The 24-85 is actually a pretty good lens. Just don't pay $300 for it. You should be able to get one used for $180 or less on craigslist or ebay.

Get the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

This.

Awesome lens for the price, if you're set on that angle of view.
