Dear /p/,
Are any of you ACTUALLY photographers anymore?
Or are you Photoshop whores (as you have shown yourselves to be time and time again) who know nearly nothing about taking pictures?

In lurking this board for a long time, I have found two things have come to be true:

1. Critiques of other people's photos are no longer supported by any evidence (in the form of a different picture, technique, etc).
Thus, instead of showing your own picture, which helps the photographer and benefits /p/, you brazenly bash a poster with bullshit and baseless claims.

2. Photoshop has become a meaningless fix for all of your problems. Rather than become better photographers – masters of light, focus, framing, depth of field, contrast, etc. – you patch-up your problems with Photoshop and use it as a crutch to aid your gimped “talent.”

tl;dr - Put up or shut up. Stop Photoshopping and start taking pictures again.

I should elaborate; because there is a different community here, one that is not 100% saturated with idiots (/b/tards), I implore you to treat it as such. Again, this means that people should start taking pictures again, not just being cruel to one another.
I have had PLENTY of pictures torn to shreds on this board. But I have also had several pictures complimented and, dare I say it, even praised. I'm not asking for people to be pushovers and I'm not asking people to be kind to one another, because THAT is truly unrealistic. What I AM asking for, instead, is that people return to basing their artistic arguments with photographic or technical fact. I realize that is lofty and sounds ridiculous, but even taking the time to read this should allow it to precipitate.

I post photos and critique others works as anon. I can't explain it in plain english, but there is an advantage to doing that- Something like people won't automatically hate or like your work/critique because it is attached to a name, I guess.

When I comment, I try to be helpful and nice as much as possible. /b/-level faggotry is saved for obvious trolls.

I don't recommend photoshop as a fix for any problem. For example, cropping can be minimized with good composition before taking a shot (Easier said than done, I know). With that said, I don't condemn it altogether. I do use it for tweaking contrasts and sharpness, and it can be nifty experimenting with different looks every now and then. Photoshop's cool, just as long as it's not a shitty HDR of a boring cat photo.

My 2 cents' worth :)

ITT people whine about nobody actually posting photos or giving good critiques instead of posting or critiquing photos.

Quit your damn whining. Go look through the last ten pages and, if you see a picture that looks good, bump it with praise. If you see a picture that's made of fail, explain why it's made of fail (and, again, bump it). I do it every once in a while when I think the gear thread to real thread ratio is too high. You can too.

Or, even better, post some fucking pictures.
>> Anonymous

>> Fat chick
But digital photo manipulation is the future of this art form, like it or not.

I'm so sick of hearing this "even if it looks good it can't be art/real photography/professional if it's gone trough Photoshop". That's just bullshit. Just like movies evolved from silent b&w movies to these amazing, computer graphics using, mind blowing pieces, will "shopping" become a natural part of photography. Actually, it already HAS.

And I would really, REALLY like to know how fixing stuff like light, focus, framing etc. is better to do when taking the photo than after taking the foto if the results are the same. All of those things are something you will naturally learn if you keep with this hobby. It's also bullshit to think that people really just ignore everything else and just shop their pictures. Most really don't.

Your attitude is pathetic. You think you're so great and you come here to call us "Photoshop whores". Why not to show your awesome pictures? I've seen a lot of good stuff here. Most posters here ain't aiming to be professionals and they don't necessarily have professional equipment.
>> Anonymous !SDPEsPMnww
>>132743And I would really, REALLY like to know how fixing stuff like light, focus, framing etc. is better to do when taking the photo than after taking the foto if the results are the same.

The results ARE NOT the same. I'd like to see you fix a picture that's been ruined by lens flare or one where the focus is way off. You can't do it. It's better to just take the picture the right way in the first place.
>> Anonymous !SDPEsPMnww

>> angrylittleboy !wrJcGUHncE
>>132743And I would really, REALLY like to know how fixing stuff like light, focus, framing etc. is better to do when taking the photo than after taking the foto if the results are the same.

So should we all just snap away and fix everything later on in Photoshop? Companies should just throw away the viewfinders and LCDs on cameras then.

It's like saying "Why should I check my spelling when I can run spellcheck later on?" or "Why should I read the manual and learn how to use my peripheral properly when someone else can fix things for me when I fuck up?".

Photoshop is a tool. Tools are meant to help you become more efficient in whatever it is that you're doing, not make you lazy.

Dear anon.
This is an amateur board, you can't expect anyone here to actually be a good photographer. There are people with talent, but nothing more. This is true for almost any photography forum. Yes, there will be scenesters, yes there will be photoshop fags, and yes there will be pretentious fags (You're in the last category, just so you know.) Also, this still is, how sad as it may be, 4chan.
Put up or shut up, or just GTFO.

>> Fat chick
>>132744
Can't you read? I said "if the results are the same". And no, they always arent. I never said they are.

>>132754
Oh, and how many people do that?? "Just snap" shitty pictures and try to fix them in PS? It wouldn't even work. 99% of photographers who use Photoshop with their pictures do their best with the camera but always things don't go as planned and like I said, not everyone is professional. And your arguments still hold no base becouse the examples you use are ridiculous. Shoppers fix their OWN mistakes. And I for one can say that when I write (and I do that a lot) I usually fix mistakes after the chapter is ready with spell checker. And I still can spell, not english so much as my mother tongue. A lot of creative writers do this , especially if they work on "flow".

Though I don't know why I'm explaining this to you. Just like>>132744you don't understand the part where I say "if the results are the same". And yes, I think that it doesn't matter what you do to your photos if they look good. I guess it's becouse I'm no "profesional" like you.

I AM a "Actual" photographer....I work freelance, and make a tidy profit doing so..

I use photoshop alot, clients come to exspect it, photographs capture a moment in time, that moment in time may not be what they want... They amy want to get rid of the odd blemish, get rid of a by stander in the background that ruined a other-whys perfect shot.

Not using photoshop is, without a doubt, retarded... Granted i do not rly on photoshop, i go out to take the best picture i can, but i still improve it. why wouldent i??

Ofc, you dont know this.... so am going to assume your NOT a real photographer, you do it as a hobby, and think your better because of it.. So please, take this advice, from somone in the industry... Move with the times, or get out :)

Personally I don't like photos that are heavily shopped. I understand minor tweaking, but when you go above and beyond, it annoys me.

>>132786

Isn't all that bad, while definitely over done, it doesn't annoy me annoy me as much as shops that drastically add or remove components from the original. Using "I'm an amateur" and "my camera sucks" as an excuse is terrible. Take more time to develop your skills with the equipment you have than shooopin' afterwards.
>> Falldog !2qYdimqiHs
Personally the appeal of photography is the ability to capture something. It's that content that's really interesting first and foremost. If you have to go ahead and edit to make it compelling you really devalue the subject. Like I said, I understand minor tweaking, but the second you start doing crazy shit, bleh.

I try to think of it as two different genres/styles of photography. One I like, one others might like. To each his own really.

Photoshop is not a crutch any more than the darkroom was a crutch, unless you let it be.

The classic high-contrast level adjustment that makes everyone immediately say "zomg shoop", for instance, is a trivial process in a chemical darkroom. So is making crazy post-processed colors (via cross processing).

You can do nice things and shitty things, both with photoshop and with a darkroom. As far as I can tell the only reason that more n00bs use photoshop is because they can torrent it free, whereas setting up a darkroom takes time and money.
