so I've been asked to take pictures at a business Christmas party in December. This is volunteer work, as a way to get a better feel for portraits and photography for me.

Anyways, I am trying to figure out how I am going to set up the lighting for the portrait. I will be taking pictures of many people coming in the party, then later burning the pictures on discs for people to use.

My idea for the lighting is basically nigger rigging a bed sheet over a bright fluorescent light. (light will be on the side of face in portrait)

Any better ideas for lighting? (hopefully inexpensive)

Never do anything that costs YOU money for free unless the value you get back is greater, Its a good rule to follow, If you don't get to charge for the costs of equipment cd's (and arguably time) you are getting used.

Taking single shots of guests will only serve to confirm lighting scenario's that you already knew about. Experimentation where you have a model that has patience and is pose-able is where you will benefit.

Convince the boss to let you use her / his, hot daughter for a photo shoot, Then do it

so to figure out the best lighting scenario i should pre-plan where i will take all the shots?

and i also shouldn't nig rig my own lighting and just find the best party lighting?

I hate to sound harsh, but you are doing it wrong. If you want a feel for portraits, you should have already been practicing. If someone asks you to do something like this, even for free, it's a gig, and you don't try new things on a gig, unless you have perfected it before hand. But since it's too late, I offer one piece of advice: short lighting. It's much more flattering for heavies.

I'm in this situation too. I've been given the task of doing our school prom with one other guy around June next year. We are by no means loaded with equipment but are going to go down a softbox and a couple of speedlight's route.

Good luck to us, eh?

Nigger Rigging? really. In this day and age, you're still using that phrase? What are you 60? I'm hoping the gig isn't in Harlem.

Pick a backdrop,

1 - set up your background light approximately 20 inches from the backdrop. Stool/Chair is set up 5 feet from the backdrop, lined up with the light.

2 - set up your fill light about 5 feet from the chair or stool, to the profile of the subject. It should sit about chest height with you.

3 - set up your main light about 30 - 45 degrees off of your zero mark at the stool/chair. about 4 feet from the subject. Adjust to head level (your head.)

Fool around until you get your desired test shots.

uh, or side wall bounce, who the hell knows anymore.

Either way, the lesson here is: If you have walls, and an optically trigger flash on a light stand, you can get anything done.

Forget the lighting. You should just HDR them all.

this is a business christmas party, whatever you do just make sure the pics come out the same. Unless these are people in the business of being critical (doubtful) they will just a appreciate someone with a nice camera, decent flash and a semblence of knowledge.
I'm a big believer in working with what you have.
