selective desaturation = gb2da

It's not that great either way. Too busy bg, bug too small so it seems more like a blemish on the picture of flower rather than the subject.

I really dislike photos that are altered to be black and white with one color to highlight the subject. It seems like a really cheesy/overdone way to make an otherwise boring photo "artistic." Whenever I see someone do something like that, I tell them to be more subtle about it. Right now your photo is just black and white with a highlight of YELLOW. The yellow slaps the viewer in the face, and you should probably be more subtle about it.

Rather than completely desaturating 95% of the photo and leaving the other 5% intensely colored. Try to be more subtle about it. What I did here in photoshop is just an example [a bad one too, since I had to airbrush some color into the grass], buy maybe you'll get an idea of what I'm getting at.

Also, you've got a good focus on the bug and the flower, I'd get rid of some of the negative space to draw more attention to the subject.

Amen. It's just so fake.

Play with light first. Photoshop should come after you've done everything within your power when framing the shot. Like everyone else has said, selective desaturation is done too much and, except in a very small number of instances, looks like crap.
