Hey, /p/. I was wondering just how many of you are able to make any kind of money doing this kind of work. You see, my photographer friend has recently received a sort of optic epiphany, and is intent on making it in the biz; he's a good guy, but kind of lazy.

I've dug up a few articles that detail the amount of work and hassle a photographer must go through to make any sort of money, especially with all crazy changes in printed and electronic media going on now.

If the guy has a chance, I have no problem with this. If it turns out that this is a shit-crazy idea, I'd like to scare him out of this nonsense before it starts affecting our ability to pay the friggin' rent. What do you think, /p/?

I doubt anyone here makes enough money to make ends meet out of photography, but a lot of people do. The moneymakers are at wedding / glamour photography. You just need to make a name of yourself. Shoot some weddings for free, distribute business cards, let your photographic work speak for itself, word of mouth is generally the best advertisement you can get. Of course you'll need to have good technique for this to even remotely work.

There's also stock photography, but it's too iffy to rely on. Photojournalism is nice if you have the chance, but you generally need a degree for that.

I know two pro photographers. They work long hours, both when they're shooting and afterwards. It's not for your friend.

Try a twelve hour work day jumping around on your feet, the whole time chasing drunk and uncooperative relatives of the bride and groom trying to get (at least sometimes) a reasonably sober looking posed portraits.

Then having to spend thirty minutes photoshopping out their wrinkles- on each shot- because they won't buy photographs that remind them of what old farts they are.

Kinda lazy? No chance in hell.

Take a lead pipe to his head and tell him to find a real job.

OP - you my housemate? I never knewed you was a /b/tard...

Seriously though, I'd love to make a living out of photography (who in this forum wouldn't?) but I fall somewhere in the not-talented-enough, not-dedicated-enough, not-willing-to-sell-myself categories.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to go study photo's next year -if i get in - or if i should be sensible and keep it a hobby and keep getting a regular income (i'm an old fart btw).

you could always just do what I do... snap pics at a portrait studio. Yeah it's fail but it's a paying job for a resume and experience. Only if you can resist slapping the hell out of bratty kids though..

You can always do photography jobs on the side.
