Play with it first, then decide after you've used it, whether you like it or not.

Mamiya is WIN. You'll have difficulty finding lenses, but check out Keh.com for that. That's a total score, I would be thrilled.

If you want though, research the going prices on those puppies, ebay/craigslist it, and sink the money into a Leica or Hasselblad or Bronica system and have some fun with that. It'll be fun, make great images, and be different from the digital SLR that you'll inevitably pick up.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
Actually, looks like the demand is rather low. It's a fine camera though, with good glass, and you should enjoy it.

thx. there was a roll of film in it from like a decade ago... will those old shots develop? will the x-ray at the airport fuck up the film?

i'm sad because now my good camera will take shots i can't share with you guyyyyssssszz. i have no scanner and no budget for one.

Kinkos is your friend. So is your local library, or your local school/college ;)

hehehehhe. Before i got my scanner, that's how I got everything scanned in and set to go. I'd go to school and they'd let me use the techlab

The old shots might develop, but will likely be grainy and faded and washed out.

The baggage X-Rays at airports will fuck up your film. The ones at the security line for carryon probably won't (assuming your film is within a certain range. I forget if it's really fast film or really slow film, but one of them gets fucked by X-rays).

Most places nowadays will give you your developed photos on a CD in addition to (or instead of) on little bits of paper. Usually costs $1-$3 extra. Shitty resolution scans, but better than nothing.

It's M42 mount. Excellent lenses can be found anywhere for this camera. However, only Mamiya/Sekor lenses can be used without stop-down metering.

i developed a roll of 35mm that was over 2 years old, and all the colors came out really yellow. pic related as it came from that roll. on the plus side, the place i developed it from did it for really really cheap because the roll was labeled as damaged.

Faster speed films, the slower ones are okay.

Just never, EVER send them through the baggage x-ray.
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
i got 'em developed. all the old ones came out too light to print and all the ones i took on the old film were very low contrast and dim, even when i used the f/1.8 and like a 1 second shutter speed. i got more film though, but it's like the 3 for $7 CVS stuff. i'll doubtlessly keep you folks updated about those shots, though now that i'm back from vacation i do not know what to shoot anymore. my girlfriend still gets in a wicked bad mood when i take her picture.

oh and by the way how on earth do i load film into a camera?

That looks like a manual, so pop open the back, both your rewind button and your opener should be one of those knobs on the top. You lift it up to release the latch on the back. Take the roll of film, insert it (in the right direction) into the camera and pull the leader out a little. Tuck it around the knob, make sure the holes catch, and use your thumb to manually wind it around once. You should be good to go after that (though shoot a few test rolls first and make sure it advances/is fully caught)

>>46053
i am still is not doin it rite. it won't catch and it won't wind. when i wind it with the advance-to-the-next-picture thingy, it stops after one advancement and is still not wound right.

>>46056

Are you giving it too much film because you try and advance it?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>46058

oops before you advance it.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>46056

Oops, i'm gonna spam up your thread here. Do you take a photo, then advance, or are you trying to advance before you take a photo?
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
i'm winding the tab that's half the width of the regular film around the gear-thing, holding it tight, and using the photo advancer to wind it becuae the thumb wheel isn't working for some reason. i have no way to tell if i lined anything up right and i am thinking that i'm going to have a bunch of half-photos. it's all wound up and working but i think i screwed up. how am i uspposed to tell if i lined it up so that the framing is right?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
The camera normally does that automatically. I know this sounds odd, but can you take a picture of the top and back of your camera, so I can see what dials you have and try to figure it out? It reminds me a little bit of my canon a-1.

The thumb wind inside the camera should actually be working, and should allow you to get the film in the slot, and wind it around a little bit. Then y ou take a few random test shots to make sure it's caught, and then photograph away. These types of film cameras are also very good and lots of fun for double exposures.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
In terms of lining things up (sorry for all the posts, after thoughts) the bottom holes of the film should wind around the little notches in the film advancer wheel. That's what carrys the film to the next frame, and that's how you want to wind it.

Is this helpful?
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
there's 2 poles, one with notches that fit the film and one farther away from the film spool that has little ridges that look like they are for thumb scrolling. i'm having problems with the shutter too and sometimes even when i think i did it right it won't seem to go. the shutter button gets stuck. i think i may have a bum piece of equipment.
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
>>46076
no by the way this does not help at all. when i line up the holes to the notches and close the camera and then try to wind it, it doens't wind around the spool, it just rattles around and doesn't catch around the spool and get wound. i ended up having to thread it all the way around the spool in one loop to get it to stay on at all.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>46079

is there a little button on the bottom of the camera, all by itself?

>>46080
Initital winding needs to be done with the camera back still open. The spool it's wrapping around won't let you turn it a little, to start off the roll?
>> Anonymous
>>46080

Are you sure? I mean the instructions and pictures are pretty straight forward. Don't close the back until it catches and winds around once.
>> ac
I know for a fact that you own a Canon S3IS. Post some pictures of how you're trying to load the film and we might be able to help you.
>> Anonymous
Sounds to me like you're closing the back before it's actually loaded. That's why you're having problems. You load the film, then take one or two dummy shots to make sure it's loaded and moving, then close the back, and andvance the film til the counter reads one.
