Pancake lenses are the reason why I want to use Pentax/Olympus.
>> Anonymous
lol wow, i want one of those.

Yeah, but f/2.8 is nothing to bitch about. Most pro zooms are f/2.8, Cartier-Bresson for the longest time used an f/3.5 Elmar, though he eventually replaced or supplemented (I don't know which) it with a Summicron.

Also, lol wut? The Pentax 40mm is f/2.8, the the 21mm is f/3.2, and the 70mm is f/2.4. None of those (that's all the pancakes I saw on their website) is a normal, and only one of them is faster than f/2.8, and that's a fairly long medium tele. The other two are a wide and a medium tele in that awkward just-too-long-to-be-normal-just-too-short-to-be-useful-for-the-stuff-medium-teles-are-used-for range between 60mm equivalent and 70mm equivalent.

Well, he has a K1000 that he's trying to switch out for some Nikon film gear to share lenses with, and he had a thing for the K10D for some time, before gave up on that, IIRC he said because the K-mount doesn't have some lenses he would need as a working PJ.

What lens is that?

Looks like a GN-Nikkor 45/2.8 on a Nikon F.

so other than small size, worse quality than normal version and more expensive, what's the point of pancake

or is the size the whole point
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>180705
It's the whole point. It's a pretty big deal for some people, and if you don't like it you can just get a 50/2.

Also it's the only way to get a 40mm lens in many systems so if you're really gay for that length you'd have to get a pancake.

Pancake lens + small camera body = absolute win for street photography

Also other times I'd like a neat little camera with a good fixed lens.
>> Anonymous
so has anyone used the zuiko one?

>>180705
someone on this board said pancake lenses were good quality?
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.

Apparently the newer Ai-P Nikkor 45/2.8 is insanely sharp, as are the Pentax ones. I haven't used any so I'm not saying anything conclusive.

Most, if not all 40/45mm pancakes are very sharp since they're based on the same straight-focus Zeiss designs refined over time. The 45/2.8 Nikkor, for instance, is a carbon copy of the earlier C/Y mount 45/2.8 Tessar, and>>180771is derived from the early 50/3.5 Elmar, which, in turn, again was based on a Tessar design.

The 25/2.8 Zuiko, however, is a very different beast since it's a completely new retrofocus design with complex aspherical lenses, and while it's reported to be sharp, it also suffers from chromatic aberrations typical for retrofocus lenses. The reason why there are so little info on it yet is Olympus' gross miscalculation of demand; it's hard to get even in Japan.
