oh hi /p/

last night i did a job for a fashion parade thing and the after party also.
I'm looking for honest and real criticism.

runway photos:

after party:

how are the runway shots? are they good enough when compared to runway shots in a similar (small) environments? did my wide angle lens help or hurt the shots?

Comment too long. Clickhereto view the full text.

and this is why photoshop won't save your ass all the time

learn to drag your shutter, front on flash is fail

at first i was gonna say they were bad, that any of those persons with some point and shoot could have done the same typical party/whaterver shot,

now i see that its you beethy

so its fucking shit.
>> Anonymous
I really liked the afterparty shots, wide angle definately helped there since that's how most club photogging is taken anyway. Shows alot of action in the shots.

What flash were you using?

As for runway, they weren't bad, background was a bit uninspiring but i guess that's the room's fault might have been nicer if shot with smaller dof since 10-22 widest is 3.5. Some photos were hurt by the wide angle distortion. A little bit more ambient light would have been nice in these ones.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
>>141188
shutter drag would be a bit tricky handheld though.. right? because I shot at 1/20.
i probably should have brought my tripod for the runway shit

I think you went a little too wide with a lot of the runway shots, too much ceiling which has distracting things on it, also boring floor.

This shot is what I think you should've done more, bit of an angle to show the whole runway and the distracting ceiling is good and dark.

The lineups look quite good though.

>> also, are the after party shots good enough when compared against other club/party photography?

no

they look like any newbie with a flash pointed straight

same thing with runway

they probably have decent enough lighting to use a fast lens instead of flashing people head on
>> Anonymous
>>141181
With the circumstances, they are pretty good, it looks really dark in there, I would suggest Getting a better diffuser (fong bowl or ripoff) as the party pics have quite shiny foreheads.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
>>141193
yea.. i was kinda happy with the after party shots, but the runway photos were a bit too dull for my liking.
i couldn't get a could vantage point though, since the models were told to face exactly in the direction i was standing.
they would also stop on the actual catwalk thing, but way near the back. (and like 3 crappy photogs were hogging that spot)

i was using the 580 EX II
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
>>141195
the client requested full body shots.. standing back more and zooming to 22mm would have meant i would have these blockade poles in the way of the shots. it sucked
in photoshop i did do a lot of lens corrections since i got some distortion at the wide end.

>>141196

it was my first time doing it, so i do believe i can improve if i spot exactly what i did wrong.

>> Anonymous
These are hard to critique, because quite honestly, they don't really seem composed at all, or as if there were any sort of moments or genuine expressions actually captured. I'm sure the people involved will be satisfied with them, but photographically they're extremely meh.

The wide angle neither helps nor hurts the afterparty shots in and of itself, but it makes the models' figures look weird. Also, it's usually easier to make a good composition with a tighter lens than a huge wide-angle like that, just because you're packing so much into the frame. I know you dig the ultrawides, but consider shelving the 10-22 for most spontaneous shooting and practice composition on something a little longer, or stick to the far 22 end of it.

>>141198
Yeah diffuser would have helped alot.

What i think /p/ should realise is that party photography isnt art and they shouldn't treat it as such. But if the final product looks good enough for non pixel peepers, then if you get paid, it's all good.

1. There's no reason why it can't be like any other documentary photography.
2. I don't shoot weddings myself, but I know people who do. Shooting the reception after the wedding is very similar to shooting something like this, and the standard is much higher than just casual snapshots with a sharper lens than people's Powershot has.

Okay, where do we start?

Runway, there's a reason people use telephotos for this kind of thing. UWA is not flattering unless you're trying for some pseudo artistic bullshit.

Assuming you hired for this, first thing is doing some scouting. This just looks completely unprepared and it always shows in the pictures.

I'll stop commenting on the choice of lenses since it's not always an option.

In one word, these just look awkward. Again, the angle just makes it wrong but I digress. Your flash is way too strong, it washes out all the color from the subject and the complete darkness in your background doesn't help either. You've just killed the complete mood. Everyone looks pasty white.

The party pictures look like your run of the mill party pictures. There's nothing fantastic about them. Anyone with a UWA can do this so there's not much to comment.

Holy crap pressure man. Make sure to follow the bride!
>> Anonymous
>>141220
That's my point. These are the sort of shots anyone loads off their Powershot after going to a nightclub, just sharper because they were taken with a nice lens.

>>141223
Try approaching it like it you were a photojournalist covering an event, tell a story with your photographs. It's the typical style for wedding photography today, but it's rather effective, so that's fine.

There's some shots you have to get- there's guides on the Internet for this, and talk it over with the bride, groom, and their parents. Things like cutting the cake, seemingly random relatives, etc.

Shoot the bride and groom getting dressed. Avoid distorting figures, and avoid heavy Photoshop work that will look super dated thirty years from now when their kids look through the albums, if 2008 isn't in a retro fad stage at the time. Go for classic.

(Like I said, I don't shoot weddings, but I know people that do professionally, as part of a business, and I've watched them work, and this is how they run it.)

Just get those photographs, whatever other random ones they say they want (they being the bridge, groom, their parents, and anyone else with a significant emotional stake in the wedding and/or the capacity to bitch at the bride and groom or you), diffuse your flash when you use it, don't make anyone look like a skelaton, and tell a story with good photographs. Look for confluences (sp?) of geometry and emotion, and compose around those.

Rarely use wide angles at the wide end, the distortions fuck people's faces up when it's in Landscape frame but can have cool effects when shot in portrait frame.

Flashes NEED... ABSOLUTELY NEED to be bounced or at the very least diffused... I'mnot sure abot Canon flashes but i presume they have an inbuilt bounce card?? USE IT if you dont have a diffuser

Pull it out then rotate the head so that the bounce card is FACING towards the lens with the flash head pointed up.

You had the right idea with slow shutter speeds to get the ambient lighting though.

not a great example, but this is the LSII tilted at an angle sinc ei was outdoors and had nothing to bounce off.

Goddamn, man, put down the 10mm and back away slowly. Ultrawide is not a flattering portrait length. I assume you have the 50/1.8, right? That's a good portrait lens for your camera body, and 1.8 (along with a high ISO) might have allowed you to get some shots without nuking your subjects with flash (though I don't know how much ambient you had, if any).

Direct, on-camera flash is almost never what you want.

One of the things that pisses me off most about this board is that people make a snap decision and just cling to it like a fat kid clinging to a fridge. Someone didn't like Beethy's first namefag'd post because they thought the deviantart filenames were stupid and he admitted that one of his shots was HDR, and they've just set a flag in their brain that says 'Beethy sucks' and no amount of good work he does from now on will sway them. Similarly, a few people picked up on the fact that I didn't just automatically flame him for using HDR and DeviantArt, so they've gotten it into their head that I do nothing but praise Beethy whenever his name pops up, despite posts like this and several previous ones where I've criticized him.

QFT. I don't like heavy shooping and I don't like model shots, so I don't like most of Beethy's work, but he's posted some pretty win photographs. Does anyone remember that photograph he took with a borrowed supertele of a guy on his balcony that was awesome?

And how did everyone respond? Since the apartment building was actually devoid of noticable color, people went "SELECTIVE DESATURATION FAGGOT GO BACK TO DEVIANT FART HURR DURR." When the apartment building was actually devoid of noticable color.

everyone above is right, never ever use direct flash, just makes the photos look crappy and pale...instead bounce it off something, what i usually do is take a piece of white board paper and strap to the back of the head of my flash and have it facing up...works fine, but not really dependable, a proper bounce system is always good...

THose were shot with the 40d and the canon 10-22. I use similar settings when I do photos at nightclubs/raves/concerts with my 50 and 30mm prime lenses for portraits of clubgoers.

I found that if you closer in or have extra light, the f4.0, 1/10, and iso 800 works well, but if your farther back you should use f3.5. Using the long shutter speed lets you soak up the nice ambient light in the room. Also, please be sure to diffuse the hell out of the flash, preferably with a fong fishbowl. Let me know if you have any more questions? I would like to get some of your tips and techniques on postproduction....

But seriously, find photographers online that you like their photos. Do a little research and you can figure what lens they use, then steal their exif data and what setting they use and go test drive. This has kept me from having to guess too much when it counts.

Keep up the good work

I don't have any links to tutorials for that kind of effect... but it's all pretty basic stuff.
I'll list the steps I go through with almost every photos that goes through complete post processing (everything on my dA pretty much)
in order

-fix any dusty spots, distractions in the background with major clone tooling
-lens correction for straightening
-crop
-shadow highlight for lightening areas that are too dark
-curves for desired effect (i usually place up to 4 to 6 dots)
-color balance
-replace color (what i usually but not always do is i select the darkest tone with fuzziness of 200.. then bring down the saturation slightly)
-unsharp mask
-done!
