Gimp > photoshop

ya know my school has the latest version of shoop and gimp, but no one ever uses gimp. In fact the photo teacher yells at you if you do use it over photoshop. Been under the impression they're about the same, just photoshop costs money and has more plugins.

Gimp is to photoshop what AIDS is to sex
>> Anonymous
>>115005
...so if you photoshop a wrong person, you get gimp?
>> Anonymous
>>115004

They are exactly the same now and the vast majority of people using or pirating Photoshop could use GIMP and either save money or save the effort of sourcing a good warez copy.

There are only a few professionals that really have to use it.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
>>115007
are the plugins compatible? Like could you use the adobe plugin for whatever rawr your camera shoots and expect gimp to be able to process it? Or does gimp make their own.

Also are third party plugins compatible, because there's tons of incredible photoshop plugins out there.
>> Anonymous
>>115009
Gimp has limited support for photoshop plugins (some work, some don't).
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
>>115011
so then why would any photographer risk gimp not being able to support their camera's rawr format?

I don't have anything against the program, it's great that there's a free on out there but it seems foolish to use it even if you're just at the 'pro-sumer' level.
>> Anonymous
>>115015
gimp can work with ufraw (wich is ased on dcraw)... supports pretty much every raw format you'll ever need

When we talk about plugins it's to make things like dfine work in gimp.. not raw loaders :P

I do use gimp, but I must say that it has shitty interface. MDI in photoshop is aids so gimp wins on this one, but its icons and general look is really ugly.. not to mention retarded menu layout XD

http://grimthing.com/archives/2007/01/11/Gimp_vs_Photoshop/

I would be willing to bet that no one here really needs Photoshop (and it has to be CS3 for their "master piece", of course) other than to stroke their ego and so they can pretend they are better photographers as they post their deviant art crap. Only a few industry professionals need it. Anyone who thinks otherwise is full of shit.

GIMP has RAW support nowadays and a huge range of interesting plug-ins thanks to the open nature of it and the growing popularity. Some of my favourites which are sadly not compatible with Photoshop, which is another reason for me to use GIMP.
>> Anonymous
most people using photoshop are using a thousand dollars worth of software to fucking tweak a shitty photo of their shoes or cat or make a faggoty forum signature image anyway.

photoshop doesn't make you a good photographer or a good artist.

Such as?

(I'm a GIMP user and I don't have any plugins installed. One script which I wrote myself to make converting to sepiatone easier, but that's it)

I thought this one was a great step forward: http://polishlinux.org/apps/graphics/gimp-tricks-liquid-rescaling/

Probably available in PS by now, but I could only get in in GIMP originally. PS and GIMP are on a parity with each other. No doubt about that. You just have to find the new crowds and sites to find the best stuff. You can even get things to make the layout of GIMP very similar to PS.

i'm just glad to see that gimp is still around. the poor little guy was sputtering in the water for a while. the world needs good open source alternatives to big mega-conglomerate bloatware.

i'll also agree that a lot of people use photoshop when something simpler would work, though i think it's a bizarre overstatement to claim that "only a few industry professionals really need it."

that's just silly.

>>115054
no its not, hitting dpreview news just today :P
>> Anonymous
>>115069

It's not silly. It's true. How many people really need the CS3 suite? You don't need $700's worth of software (more if you've just pirated the complete suite) to do basic sharpening and contrast of your thanksgiving dinner at mom's or your KEWL SK8TR shots with lame filters. Even many professionals do very little work to photos outside of the basic processes.

Those who need more than the basic will still have all they need supplied by GIMP unless they are *pros* with specific needs in mind (i.e. NOT YOU). CS3 and such are aimed at industry professionals and those are the only ones who need it.

Again, READ THIS: http://grimthing.com/archives/2007/01/11/Gimp_vs_Photoshop/

thanks for writing that in the second person. it really made me feel like you know me personally.

and "industry professionals" (such a smart guy term, by the way; did you learn that in college, smart guy?) number in the hundreds of thousands. more than a few. and what if maybe more than one industry uses photoshop?

never mind that i essentially agreed with you.

p.s. how did you know that i take kewl sk8tr shots?

Does GIMP have all of these features? (I'm asking legitimately.)

Something like ACR
Curves/Levels
Dodge and burn
Channel mixer
USM
A way to do high pass sharpening
Clone stamp
A selective sharpening tool
Saturation control, both selective and global

If yes, then it has everything I need. If not, then I'm going to have to stick with Photoshop.
>> ken-t
mmmm... I use Lightroom for basic adjustments.

need CS3 for HDR and Panoramas

>>115098

Yes, it does.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

>Something like ACR
Define 'like ACR'
>Curves/Levels
Yep. Under the 'Colors' menu
>Dodge and burn
Yep
>Channel mixer
Yep. Colors->Decompose->Channel mixer
>USM
Yep. Filters->Enhance->Unsharp Mask
>A way to do high pass sharpening
Dunno. http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=6709 seems to suggest yes..
>Clone stamp
Yep
>A selective sharpening tool
Yep
>Saturation control, both selective and global
Yep

I wouldn't call "industry professionals" a "smart guy" term or particularly unusual. It's a standard term. I've seen it used in all manner of publications (reviews, news, whatever), online and print. It's also used in a lot of advertising. I think sneering at what you seem to perceive as "fancy words" makes you look the sort of person to sneer at "book learnin'". GIT OUTTA MAH YARD BEFORE AH DUN GIT MAH GUN. :P

i don't need to refute them, since i agreed with you early on. really, i did; go read my post. i only took umbrage with the bold claim that only a few people actually need photoshop. it's a silly claim. there are thousands of concept artists who depend on photoshop for day-to-day jobs, not to mention print shops, advertising photographers, so on and so forth.

and i love gimp, by the way. i mean, obviously, i do. my first post in this thread was in full support of gimp. I used gimp way back when it was a buggy, problematic piece of shit that didn't have even a quarter of the functionality that photoshop 5.5 had at the time. it's nice to see it's still prospering, especially with the flourishing interest in open source software these days.

By "like ACR" I meant something where I can load and make basic adjustments to a raw file before importing it into a full-on image editing thing to do things like dodging and burning.
