580 II EX + Rebel XTi Anonymous
sup /p/
Anyone have experience using this unit as an external unit? I've read so many shit around. People getting scared by over-voltage and other questions. Plus, XTi doesn't have native PC connection, so I would need a hot-shoe to pc adapter, I didn't found anything that rang a bell, even for DIY. The strobist has something related but I did not quite understand it. Anyone knows the drill? Thankee

oh hai guize was somebody talking about wireless flashes?

>> People getting scared by over-voltage and other questions.

... That's only with old flash units. None of the EX models will fuck your camera, unless you're an idiot.

>> Plus, XTi doesn't have native PC connection, so I would need a hot-shoe to pc adapter

Uh, search harder?

>> how do you run it off camera on Canon ?

Master, such as the high end Speedlites, PC cord, Peanut optical trigger, Cactus wireless trigger.

If you're a richfag, ST transmitter or Pocket Wizards.

Canon are so fucking unbelieveble sometimes. No internal wireless sync JUST beacause they want to sell the ST transmitters for insane prices. On top of that, they sell the transmitter without a battery and charger. (500$ extra). You can see this kind of marketing in other areas, such as the lenses. They all come without a lens hood, unless you buy an L-lens.
I am a canon user, and when I buy gear from them (L or not), I'd like too feel like Im buying exclusive equipment. Canon SLRs arent some cheap shit brand with a bad rep, but they still get all the benefits of being one. I whish this would be mentioned alot more often in reviews etc, cause its really a problem.

Im thinking of selling my gear and go over to nikon, because I want a brand that takes its costumers seriously, but canon has a hold on me just like a really bad fucking girlfriend.

Yeah, a company like Nikon would never do something sleazy like designing their lower-end cameras so that they wouldn't autofocus with all but a relatively small subset of their AF lenses, and wouldn't meter at all with older ones. OH WAIT.

Pro tip: All camera companies do sleazy things like this. Except maybe for Leica, and that's one of the reasons Leica charges absurd prices.

Not wanting to raise a shitstorm but what are Sony doing that is stupid?

No PC on the lower end but neither did minolta, but they have inbuilt wireless.

>>152834
You are right, but i dont think the D40 autofocusing issues are particularly relevant, considering the extremely low price. Buy a D40, and you know you entered thorough the absolute lower end.

Buy a canon 5D, then a 50mm 1.4 and a 580EX, and you have great and expensive equipment which lacks necessary parts/functions.

>>152840

except the d40x and d60 cost more than the xt and xti
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>152837
Well, just off the top of my head, they stuck with Minolta's stupid nonstandard hot shoe so you could only buy Minolta/Sony flashes to work with it.

>>152845

is it really that bad though? For people just starting to get into photography that chose minolta/sony, they won't have any legacy gear to worry about.

Sony makes all the gear that uses the iISO shoe or converts it to one. I for one like be able to remove my flash one handed in <1 second and the smaller footprint of the iISO shoe.

Whens the last time you bought an offbrand flash anyway? Metz has flashes that work with the iISO shoe.

It doesn't matter if you only use Sonylta gear. It does matter if you have more than one camera system. My flashes all work together, whether it's mounted on a Holga, my Ricoh, my Nikon, or my Mamiya.

No worse than Canon not giving you free lens hoods with the lower-end cameras, or Nikon keeping their EXTREM BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY limited to only their higher-end bodies.

I'm not saying it's a horrible injustice...it's just a thing that Sony/Minolta did to lock you into using their flashes and only their flashes. A little bit sleazy, but no worse than things that other makers have done.

>I for one like be able to remove my flash one handed in <1 second and the smaller footprint of the iISO shoe.
And I like the slightly lower lens costs that Canon achieves by leaving out lens hoods. And D40 owners pretty much all bought the D40 in part because of the lower cost that Nikon got from taking out a motor and adding some high-end advantage.

>Whens the last time you bought an offbrand flash anyway?
December.

OP here.
>>152814
It would remain the TTL abilities, using that setup with a canon speedlite?

>>152820
Over voltage is with older flashes. But XTi really doesn't support off-camera flash without an adapter. the as-15 that was mentioned is quite mandatory. But these Cactus v2s seem to be a nice idea. it's only $27.95 on ebay. I'm a hobbist so there's no problem of them failing once in a while.

Both the 7D and the A700 have a PC socket.

Sigma make flashes for the mount too, I dont really think its a valid argument tho, its like complaining you cant use canikon glass natively on it!

I'm amazed that no one spammed vivitar 285hv here. We're all talking about cheapskate methods to use off-camera flash and considering one of the most expensive canon flashes. lol

>Sigma make flashes for the mount too, I dont really think its a valid argument tho, its like complaining you cant use canikon glass natively on it!
Except that every other manufacturer--including Minolta, pre-Maxxum--used a hot shoe that's backwards compatible with the standard. You can use Minolta/Sony flashes, you can use a few third-party flashes that were manufactured specifically for the weird mount, or you can use an adapter. I've yet to ever see a Maxxum-compatible flash in the wild, but I see hot-shoe flashes all the time.

There was no real reason for Minolta to switch to a weird hot shoe when they moved to AF other than that they wanted people to buy new Minolta flashes. And again, I'm not saying it's a huge deal. I'm not saying that it's something that makes the Alpha line demonstrably worse than other camera makers' lines. All I'm saying is that it was a little extra bit of money grubbing that Minolta/Sony did. I'm sure there are other examples that I don't know of simply because I'm not really versed with the Minolta/Sony AF world.

So the canikon flash shoe is the same as the pentax/olympus/sigma one?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>152924
Yep. Everyone but Minolta added some extra contacts for their various proprietary TTL systems, but I can still stick a Canon flash on a Nikon and it'll still work in manual mode.

No.

Sorry btw, i thought the question had been answered!
>> Anonymous

why would you use that cord when canon's own oc3 lets you use TTL
>> Anonymous
>>152830

All the canon xxd series and up have pc sockets...

Plus any serious strobist stuff isn't done with in camera stuff, they all buy $500 pocketwizards anyway.

Lens hoods would be nice, but honestly, whats the big deal? Go buy an ebay china copy for $5, they're the same thing.

am I missing something? pc and sync cables are different?
