So /p/, I'm planning on getting my first DSLR in a month or so, but I can't decide between a nikon D60 or a canon XT. Naturally the quality should be good for both, but I'm looking for the easiest manual mode- as in the easiest navigation to change what is needed. Any suggestions (besides kill self)?

Get the D60

My name is Ken Rockwell and I approve this message.

D80, D70s, D70

OP here, I just wanted to add that I mainly do macro and landscape- if that helps at all. I can't seem to find too much on the D70, and Nikon doesn't seem to support it anymore. The biggest plus towards Canon is that I already have a lot of lenses, so I'd already be setup for the transition. Being that I've never used Nikon, is it really THAT good? If I got a Nikon, the D60 or D80 would be my choice...leaning towards the 60.

Also, what's the battery life of the Nikons since they use CCDs rather than CMOS?

Consider getting a D80 or Canon EOS 30D on closeout. Both of those are better than the D60 and XT (and they're both going for around the same price as the D60 nowadays)

D80, the D60 supports absolutely none of the older Nikon lenses. The Canons dont support 35mm EOS EFS lenses or whatever they are either.

Frankly, you can trust Nikon gear. The same goes for high end Canon gear. It's reliable. It's sturdy. It will take the abuse that goes with professional rigors. You can pick up a Nikon every day, and use it, just like you use a tool. Hell, you can drive nails with old Nikons. That's the quality we're talking about here.

When you make your livelihood, you don't choose the brand that offers an equivalent, even similar system, you choose the brand that is a trustworthy and time-tested tool. Thus, Nikon. There are always distinctions to be made between Nikon and Canon, but I've often heard this statement, and I believe it: Canons are the best cameras made by engineers, but Nikons are the best cameras made by photographers. It's a generalization, but that feels very true to me.

For manual I find the 30D very easy to use. To spin wheels to adjust the ap/ss and one button to adjust iso.

How much easier can it get?

The 5D/1D line does not support ef-s lenses, only ef.
but the 30/40D line and the XT support both ef and ef-s

I see a lot of Nikon fanatics...but without any reason that I can see. I don't use Nikon...and haven't since high-school photojournalism. I don't use focus points, as I don't like auto focus, so these "features" are really just a lot of useless crap in my way so to speak. I dislike "modes", I HATE LCD viewfinders, I will never use auto focus, and I like batterylife. I've seen a lot of Nikons messed up- usually lens-related problems, but I take care of my things, so this probably wouldn't be an issue.

I've tried to find good comparisons between Nikon and Canon's mid-range cameras....and it always seems to go into a fanboy war. Any real comparisons out there?

No, because you pay extra money for a bigger LCD when you shouldn't need it. Extra garbage that cost more.

Stating that you can use a Nikon as a hammer doesn't really help out Nikon's sales.
