There's a 90% chance I'll be getting a dSLR soon, and I'm looking for recommendations. I'm hoping for a kit with a couple lenses that hopefully isn't over $1500.

What I really want is a Pentax K200D... from what I've read it's a pretty kick ass camera, and is appropriate for dSLR beginners. Plus I started with a Pentax SP1000 about 2 years ago, and I'm sorta loyal to the underdog here.

Cool story, bro

It's just as good as any other SLR for a beginner like you. Get what fits your hand and wallet. Pentax also has a new beginner-model SLR coming (K-m).

Both K200D and K-m have pentamirror viewfinders, so not the best for manual focus lenses you might have on your Spotmatic.

I just read about the K-m, when is it supposed to be out?

wait... IS THAT AN OFFICIAL AD?

Needs more smiling toddlers, Care Bears and gay rainbow stars in the background.

But does it come in silver?

It would be instant K.O. for everyone including Panasonic if they made a pink K-m with a kit lens to match.

...Fuck, I'd buy one just to piss gearfags off.

Thread derail incoming, sorry OP. (What you want is the Pentax *ist D, much better screen for focusing your manual focus glass and it's really the best entry-level DSLR made.)

On the topic of the G1:

It's only slightly larger than the G10.

The sensor seems to be really good, especially color reproduction, but the kit lens is decidedly unimpressive. Not bad, but the bokeh isn't really pleasing and it lacks accutance.

if i may ask, what camera are you using presently?

Which is of the course the price paid for a larger sensor.

The 20/1.7 and any prime you stick on it with an adapter will make them more on par.

Well, not any prime, obviously.

The G1 would look funny as hell with a ZD 300/2.8 mounted on it.

get the *ist D or one of it's variants, and a kmount -> m42 screwmount adapter so you can use all your old screwmount lenses
the *ist with no lenses is like 250, and you could get a smc pentax-A lens that's good like the 50/1.7 for relatively cheap if you didnt wanna use stopdown metering.
