ive used a sony dsc-v3 and it was ok, opinions of that camera? is there a good digital for begginers that doesnt cost an arm and a leg? if i go film, im thinking pentax k1000 unless someone has a better idea. i like the look of older camera bodies like the k1000 that sorta have that leica look.

A budget would help. An arm and a leg to some people are worth $2,000 and less than $500 to others.

ok, im in college. if that dont sum it up, im needing a good camera that if its 35mm, costs about 100$ give or take. if its digital, i can spring for a little more since ill save on film development, so about up to 150-200. im thinking the pentax is good, i just need to find a job at a place where i can get my film developed without paying for it, unless someone wants to cue this noob in on something better.

i found www.keh.com but its prices are through the roof. do they verify the items theyre selling are good quality or is it just a rippoff? ebay is cheaper. on keh i did find a cheaper manual focus pentax.

Browse craigslist. That way you can go look at it in person and know what you're buying, plus it'll be cheaper than keh.

The k1000 has everything you need to take great photos.

I buy most of my stuff from KEH, have for years. They almost always underrate and I've never had a problem with it. Their return policy is sane, too.

You're looking in the very good direction with the K1000. I would however recommend an ME Super instead. It avoids a few flaws of the K1000 - it has a metal shutter, GPD-based meter (with wider range, too), and a wider range of times. While K1000 is a very robust construction indeed offering all that you will need, it's production started in 1976. The first two elements I mentioned are quite time-sensitive, and you might be out of luck if you can't find a recent item.

As for digital, I assume you mean a dSLR? You definitely won't find any good in that range. Don't ever get tricked into getting a "consumer level" dSLR. Unless you can shell out for a pro dSLR (which *might* be within a four digit price range, but not necessarily if you add related items), you'll just be wasting your money. However, some PowerShot is fine for family snaps and other random stuff.

you have my full attention right now, and i was looking in the direction of other pentax cameras because ive heard good things and theyre affordable, so i did see the me and think about that one. on the digital note, no, i know dSLRs suck at the comsumer level.
digital rebel, d50 and d70 are what were talking about right? also i think my step dad bought a fujifilm some shit dslr but the lens isnt even removable.

The K1000 is a nice choice: sturdy, cheap, plenty of lenses available. For the same reasons, I chose a Sears KS2. It's made by Ricoh for Sears, acutally, and It's just like the Pentax - even uses the same lenses. Similar units can be had on eBay for $25 to $100, depending on the included lenses, etc. I practically stole mine for $80 with three lenses, a flash, motor drive, and other goodies. Only drawback is it uses an LED light meter that's hard to use in the dark. The K1000 uses a very simple "needle and eye" analog meter. But check out the Sears line if you're into being different.

ME Super. Plain ME does not offer Manual mode, and you definitely want it.

you guys are awesome. im falling in love with vintage cameras right now.
i like a silver body, but ima probably get more than one camera.
on the same note:

that any good? lol, please nobody snipe it from under me if you use ebay, i really need a camera. also, for the ease of use, i think ive seen crap before on digital film things that go where the film sits but is digital. is there a such thing?

is ks and ks super 2 the same as ks2?

The KS is a good bet. I had the "X" model, with the same light meter. Also uses the easy-to-find "K-mount" lenses. Same light meter problem, though. The TLS, on the other hand, is the inverse; same easy-use light meter as the K1000, but uses slightly harder to find screw-mount lenses. I think that's actually the same type as the K1000; you'll find them on eBay. Plus, it has that really classic look and IMHO it's just gorgeous.

If you really want to learn how to use a camera, the LED light-meter models will just make you cheat all the time, and you'll learn nothing. My most responsible recommendation is for the K1000 or the TLS.

BTW, I get mosta my nfo from Matt's cameras:

i bet you guys are loving me for not being a lazy ass and going "WHICH CAMERA? DIGITAL REBEL OR D50/70???" lol.
yeah, i want to know and learn. the led light meter is a turn off.
the tls is looking good, but does it have the same sturdy internals that the k1000 are lacking that the ks2 has? also i found more sears cameras.
the ks 500 and the ks1000.
just to clearify im looking at those 2, the ks, the ks2, a ks super 2, the pentax k1000 and a pentax Me super. NOT ME.
i want a metal shutter, or a more recent camera if it doesn have a metal shutter, and i kinda dont want that led light meter.

also, i need to know about lenses. do i want screw mount or k mount, which is better/cheaper and more plentifull?
>> Anonymous
well, much thanks for all your help, im lookin at a lot of cameras now on ebay. i just have one more brand i want to know about, Zenit. it any good?

The KS series all have the LED meter, but are otherwise awesome. The KS2 super even has aperture preview, which basically lets you see what the light meter sees and can give you an idea of what shutter speed to go with even if you can't read the meter.

Screw mount is slightly less common than k-mount, but sometimes you'll walk into a store and they'll have a whole shelf of screw mount and no k-mount. If you buy online, they're both so plentiful, it doesn't matter.

The K1000 is really the sturdiest camera out there, but all old metal cameras are pretty rugged.

At this point, I think you've got a pretty good idea of what's out there; just pick the prettiest one with the lowest price and the highest seller rating.

also found a ZX50. that worth anythign? auto and manual focus.
>> KenmoreCamera !zxLai8BGaQ
sorry - only familiar with the aforementioned Sears stuff. Autofocus is dead weight. After a few rolls your left hand will be better and faster than any auto.

Some people say that the Super Takumar/Super-Multi-Coated Takumer (NOT SMC-Pentax) screwmount lenses are among the greatest lenses ever made and are "better" than many of their later K-mount replacements.
I hold no opinion on that. I will say that the super taks that I have are the best "feeling" lenses I have ever used. The fit and finish is amazing.
Pentax makes an M42->K-mount adaptor, so it doesn't really matter at the end of the day.

M42+K nets you about one millyarn lenses. Troll pawns and fleas for random finds and keh/ebay for stuff you're especially interested in.
One of my favourite and most-used lenses was found at a flea market for $10. It was in-box with manual, looked unused. Gotta wake up early and go hunting!

rubberized silk shutters piss me off! wtf, can i get a metal replacement for that crap?
