Their not that great, I have a S6000 and I really wish it was an SLR, if you can save up a little more money get a Canon Rebel.

Check what the Canon P&S cameras are going for too. They are good by all accounts.

try getting an slr. you can get one for a couple hundred off craigslist.

I started with an S5100 and was pretty happy with it. I finally outgrew it and bought a Nikon D80. You might want to consider just going to a SLR if you can save a little longer for it. You'll end up outgrowing that camera eventually, if you're serious about photography. Though mine served me well.
