Hey /p/ I've always had the urge to get into photography as a hobby, so I'm asking for your advice on which camera I should get. Keep in mind it's nothing serious yet, so I'm not really looking to drop a whole lot of money down on a new camera. Just a good amateur camera. Keep in mind I'm a college student so I have a small budget.

The only important matter in your choice of camera is wich one you can handle best. I've seen people take most amazing pics with even the simplest of cameras. I prefer Canon, but it's just because i'm used to them. Nothing else.

Get a digital camera good enough to give you manual controls. Look for a little knob on the top with "M", "A" (or 'Av'), and "T" (or 'Tv') on it. My usual recommendation is the Canon A6x0 series, or if you're really strapped for cash, hit eBay for an old Canon A95. I like the flip out LCD screen. This is the camera I started with.

OP i am in a similar situation -- i settled on the canon powershot s3 is. it's been called a decent subtitute for low-level SLRs in terms of its quality and has heightened customizaeability and manual control.
