You have to gauge your familiarity with a camera. You can do a lot with 1000 dollars. If you're just a beginner, I don't think you'll need to spend that much for something like a compact Nikon or Canon camera. You will only need to spend over 1000 if you are trying to delve in to the dSLR arena. Also you need to consider what sort of photography you will be doing (potraits, landscape, low-light/night, macro). Some are better than others. If you're just going around and taking pictures for family occasions or social events, almost ANY compact camera will do. I don't think that /p/ can help you with anything until you help yourself first.
