So rangefinders are supposed to be the choice of candid photographers due to their smaller lens size and un-intimidating-to-the-average-joe looks.

But, the only digital rangefinder is $5k+. I personally have some shots fucked up when people notice me b/c of my SLR / Zoom lens combo.

What does anon do when shooting candids with a dSLR? Pretend to be shooting something else, try to be stealthy, ask permission (not very candid) or just suck it up and not give a fuck if people see you and get pissed off?

this thread doesnt apply to you.

Even if I had $5000+ to drop on a M8, I'd still use my old pocket minolta or borrow my father's G9 for candid shots. Focusing manually using the distance scale SUCKS.
>> Anonymous
Usually pretend I'm shooting something else. Or focus on an object of an equivalent distance to the subject beforehand, come at the appropriate framing distance, fire quick, hide again.

I use a point and shoot, but that doesn't help you any.

In this article Mike Johnston explains a very common and good technique that'll work well with anything with manual focus, although the article is about rangefinders and specifically Leicas.

It used to be rangefinders, now (If you're not too nitpicky about image quality) it's point & shoots.

But regardless of what you're using, just suck it up and don't give a fuck.

>>191189
Speaking of film rangefinders, anybody have any suggestions for good, relatively inexpensive (IE-less expensive than the several thousand dollar Leicas) film rangefinders?
>> Anonymous
>>191281
Used older Leicas. IIRC, on eBay early Ms (M3, M2, and probably the M4) usually go for about $500, sometimes even making it out for $200-$300 if someone screws up and does a no reserve auction.

If you're looking for something really cheap, there's some Russian copies of Leica Screwmount cameras. FED or Zorki or something like that; I know those are Russian copy cameras, but I always get the names of what types confused.
>> Jesus !1EQ.kCAg9c
>>191288
And if you're looking for something new (not sure why, but some people are into that sort of thing), the Voigtlander Bessa R2 is a pretty decent camera and you can pick one up for about $500-600.
>> angrylittleboy !wrJcGUHncE
>>191281
The cheapest interchangeable-lens RF you can get are FEDs. The Fed-2 looks ok (though I haven't used one myself). You can get them for less than $30 plus shipping on ebay; just stick with well-known sellers like kubanoid or alex-photos to minimize the chances of getting a bad one.

For fixed-lens RFs, get a Canonet QL17 or a Yashica Electro G/GS as suggested in another thread.

The Sigma is not a rangefinder. My Epson RD-1s is, and it's digital and less than 5k so maybe all of you in this thread should do some research.

Also rangefinders are not magical stealth machines and I get noticed with mine all the time. Candids are all about technique, not gear.

Pic very related.

In the two pictures I posted I was in places where you were not supposed to be taking pictures-- I was shooting from the hip discreetly. Either I could had fiddled with a SLR, or even been seen looking through the viewfinder of a camera for a second I would have had dirty looks and been expected to leave-- OR I could have gotten the shot like I did.

I think they're nice shots given the circumstance.

>> Anonymous
>>191483
Yeah, sorry. At least those other cameras have decent IR filtering.
>> Anonymous
>>192399
To set this straight:

1. The M8 would suffer from image quality problems if it had a thicker IR filter. The short distance in a rangefinder between the lens mount and the sensor is problematic for digital sensors. The sensor on the M8 is an achievment for working well at all.

The Epson RD-1 had a thicker IR filter, and it suffered image quality problems occaisonally because of it. There's a thread somewhere on photo.net about this, with visual examples. And guess what? It was less severe and less common, but the RD-1 had problems with synthetic black fabrics going magenta, too.

2. Less IR filtration is generally considered to improve the look of monochrome files.

3. It's not hard to stick a free filter on your lens.
>> sage sage
>>192412
1. right, until they release the M9 with this problem fixed
2. I don't think so, tim
3. You only get two, not to mention OMG A FILTER ON MY LEICA NOOOOOoos

Kind sir, I personally do not believe that this thread is about digital rangefinders. I believe this is a thread on gear for so-called 'candid photography'.

>> Anonymous
>>192412
I know that if I'd pay $5k+ for something to take pictures with, I'd like it to, oh I dunno, have proper IR filtration, for instance. Leica M8 FUCK YEAH, when a cheap POS camera doesn't make black things purple.
