/p/, what is the widest non-fisheye lens available out there?

I know Olympus has a 7-14mm out there but with the translation factor that equates to 14-28mm on a full frame. Anything wider out there?

There's a Peleng 8mm, but that's fish eye.

sigma 12-24

always related

On crop, one of the various 10-20 or 10-22s.

On full-frame, the Sigma 12-24

i remember schooling you on that when you said 14mm, then you were like ;_; sadface

sigma 10-20 but only on sony/pentax/nikon, canon = 16mm

The widest rectilinear lenses for 35mm cameras are the out-of-production Voigtlaender 12mm and>>165513.

Yeah, I hate when I'm wrong.

But hey. I grew as a person. Now I know more useless lens trivia.

Can someone explain the whole full frame/crop thing to me?

Sorry to be such a newfag, but I don't remember reading anything about this in the manual for my camera (k10d)...

Is there a physical barrier to a wider rectilinear lens, or is it just issues of cost, size, weight, etc?

look at this and stare at it until you understand

Did you get banned on wiki and google?

12-14mm is pretty damn wide for any kind of purpose

for anything more, you can use fisheye or merge multiple shots
>> Anonymous
>>165540
It's mainly limited by complexity and the refractive index of available optical glass. Plus the fact that images shot with a 14mm rectilinear lens already look quite unnatural to the human eye, so a wider lens has a very limited scope of application.

Digital cameras' sensors are, with a few exceptions, smaller than a 35mm frame of film. Therefore, a lens with a given focal length will act like a lens with that focal length multiplied by the crop factor on a less-than-full-frame digital.

Your K10D has a 1.5x crop factor, which means that a 50mm lens behaves like a 75mm lens would on a 35mm film camera in terms of field of view and perspective.

It's basically like taking a 35mm frame and cropping out just a chunk in the center, hence the term 'crop factor'.

In during ac posting a tl;dr.

why is the nikon version always more expensive?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>165624
Nikon mount more complicated, maybe? Do they still use mechanical couplings for aperture control and whatnot?
>> Anonymous
>>165624why is the nikon version always more expensive?

uhhhhh where the fuck are you looking?

it's not in sigma or tamron's practices to make a certain version more expensive

B&H has it at the same price for all mounts and i'm pretty sure all sigma comparable lenses are the same prices regardless of mount

Amazon... probably foolish.

Wheres the best places to get lens' online? UK and US shout out, i have friends there too.

B&H

adorama

ritz

uh what's the other one, i forgot, whatever

a lot of amazon's stuff isnt actually sold by amazon, its by merchants who use amazon to sell their items for them, so it sells at the merchant's price. if the nikon version is from a differnt merchant, that would be the reason for the price difference.

Sometimes Sigma puts HSM into the Nikon version so it's compatible with the D40.
>> Anonymous
Nikkor 13/5.6 is probably the widest rectilinear.

Then there's Nikkor's 6/2.8 fisheye :)

Except HSM is good for every other camera as well.

It's just that I've noticed that Sigma tends to release HSM version of DC zooms (18-50 EX f/2.8, 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5, 18-50mm f/3.5.-5.6) as Nikon only, and since it IS a plus for any other mount, the only reason I can see is to ensure compatibility with the entire Nikon line.

Sigma 12-24 is the widest current production full frame rectilinear.

You can rig the F mount Voigtlander 12mm Heliar onto an F mount adaptable camera provided it has mirror lockup, or you can grow a pair of enormous testicles like this guy and just let the mirror slap the top of the lens casing:

Fuck, that link is to the 15mm Heliar. Same thing has been done with the almost identical 12mm, so use your imagination.
