Sup /p/

I just bought a canon EFS 10-22mm lens, and now require a 77mm UV filter so i don't fuck up the front element.

Would buying an (uncoated) hoya green series one suffice, or do i need to shell out for HMC madness?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
Protip: Use the lens hood and lens caps

Or grab a CPL so at least you have a filter that's useable... though at 10mm...
>> Anonymous
The green ones don't even use optical glass. I wouldn't touch them.

It's a shame Canon doesn't bundle lens hoods with EF-S lenses, not even on the 900$ 17-55. :/

But I'm a sucker and still get one because I don't use UV filters.

really?? none of the EF-S lenses come with lens hoods?... double U Tee Eff

Canon only bundle lens hoods (and pouches or hard cases) with their L designated lenses (also one sort-of-L lens that costs a shitload). I've always been slightly annoyed by this, but any time I've complained about it the FANBOY RAGE shouted me down on forums. Some of the non-L lenses can be more expensive than some of the L lenses. It's a silly policy they've stuck rigidly to for decades.

I found out you can buy cheap knock-off hoods that are a tenth of the price from China (of course) so I'm happy now. The Chinese copies are just the same as the real deal too.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
You know you dont have to buy a canon lense hood, any wide angle 77mm hood will do. The one the sony has is pretty hueg for a wide angle and gives great protection (as does my 77mm uv heh)

Unless you work in very wet, sandy or human filled (people love to touch) enviroments getting a filter is a waste of time.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
The Chinese copies of the official hoods are about £5. Unless someone is throwing one away then you're not going to get them much cheaper.

Don't get a uv filter, uv filters only affect your pictures negatively. It's like shooting all your pictures through a window. Grab a lens hood and use a lens cap! It's not like you're going to be throwing your $700 toy around, just be careful with it.

can everyone stop being so easily trolled here, i dont even have to try which is boring.

So what type of ND filters (for cokin) are worth getting?

"NO NO, I WAZ JUST EASILY TROLLIN. TOTALLY HONEST. NO REALLY. YEAH, JOKES ON YOU AND I'M NOT RETARDED."

You can't make something true just by saying it often enough. You're a fucking moron for STILL not admitting it. If you weren't such a coward you'd come clean rather than keep this pathetic charade up.

You are the chairborne of /p/, except even more retarded.

Im better than chairborn, besides if you hang about on /k/ you should know enough trolls to instantly be able to recognise this.

If you noticed, warren knew i wasnt being serious straight away, how come you took so long anon? quite stupid tonight/morning/wherever?

Not true. The chance is equally likely that you're a moron who's parroting back things that you've heard on /p/ from other people. Again, the two possibilities are functionally equivalent.

Can you *feel* the love here?

If you are willing to learn Photoshop then the only filters from the Cokin system I'd suggest are the graduated ones. Remember that there are several kinds though.

Don't get the A system as it's smaller, go for the P system. You can get even larger systems, but I doubt you'd need it and it's expenditure that isn't cost effective. You can buy the cheapest holders, hoods and accessories for it as those are just plastic crap anyway and there are many people who make them for the same sizes and system but try to get the decent filters as those are what matters when it comes to images. Some of the cheap ones aren't very good.

It's worth getting the hard and soft gradients. one ends with a more obvious line that you have to carefully match up to the level and flat horizon and the other has a soft fade from dark to clear that is more suitable for other uses. It'll be obvious when you look at the catalogues.

You can get tinted versions of the graduated filters which are nice too, but in this age of Photoshop there is no point as a tint doesn't take long to do. It's the ND graduation you're really after.

You can also get the non-graduated ND filters to combine with them, but if you only wanted normal (non-graduated) filters then I'd suggest good quality screw on ones for their better optical quality and ease of use (no bulky and cumbersome holders on the front).

If the front element of your lens moves, remember that it will turn and drag this holder and filters around too. Probably best you work it manually if that is the case.

My sis bought me a p cokin holder for xmas, so i thought I might as well get some filters for it instead of just wasting it. Goes up to 82mm so i can get a 77mm front and use it for my superwide.

I also will probably use it on my films (when i get round to getting a 7 or 9) so the tints might actually be useful then (along with the more fun double exposures etc)

The ND Grads are what i want but i duno which one is going to be the most usefull, a 4x ND soft graduated 1/2 frame sounds the best tho?
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>110485

Tough choice. I can't really make that one for you. They are all there for a reason, I suppose. You'd have to go with the kind that suits you and your (potential) photos, if you know what I mean. If you look at the Kood, Cokin, etc. sites you will see some nice examples of all their filters in use. Much better than I could ever guess at or describe for you.

Handy tip if you have trouble with the wides: If you see any vignetting on the wide end you can cut or sand back one of the slots on the front of the holder to use it on them. Saves having to get another wide holder. :D

Most people don't use all the slots on the standard holder anyway. Especially if all they are using is the grip slot for the graduated ones to slide up and down.

Uh.. I bought a 17-55 2.8IS EFS and it sure damn did come with a hood. Don't know if that's the case for other models, but don't mislead people into thinking this is true for all of them.
>> Anonymous
>>110531

Don't mislead people because you're the one exception.

Canon has been doing this since the beginning. Only L lenses are shipped with hoods and pouches/cases.

Maybe your store threw in a freebie or a knock off.

Don't confuse hood with lens cap in case you're a newfag.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>110531

Canon do not bundle their lens hoods with their 17-55 2.8 lenses. Absolutely not. Those consumer lenses do not get them by Canon's own policy. They don't hide it or make it a secret. Look all over the net, wikis or print articles for reviews or mentions of it and all their other lenses. It's one of the things that make the L lens packages stand out.

If you got one, then you paid extra for it as part of a package from the shop you got it from or it was thrown in for free by the shop as an incentive. Canon has nothing to do with it. You haven't clarified if it was "THE" lens hood for it or "A" lens hood either though. It sounds like you could have got anything.

Fixed for the newfag. Not you BA.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
Don't bother with the P system, go for the larger Z system.

I got the P wide angle holder, it was fine on the 17-55 2.8 but on the 10-20 sigma it showed a little vignetting.

Also the main problem is that the P wide angle holder only HAS ONE slot. What i was referring ot before was that fact that you need more than one GND filter most of the time as 3 stops most times really isn't enough to balance foreground and background.
