so i never really noticed vignetting until people started to point it out on this board
and now, everywhere i look, i see the stupid damn vignetting, especially in photojournalism

see pic for example, this was on the BBC for f sakes
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/08/in_pictures_living_in_the_shadows/html/1.stm

before /p/, i probably would have thought that these were so visceral. now i just can't help but focus on the damn corners.

tell me whats wrong with vignetting?

Vignetting is like HDR, most people just use it horribly but It does look nice in certain situations.

Pretty overdone there.

Nothing really. No different than any sort of creatively-used distortion, whether grain or depth of field or black and white, or multiple narrators in fiction, or lo-fi recording in music. We're just more used to some of them than others, and some people like to shove sticks up their asses and double-bolt their aesthetic sense.

Generally, things like all of that aren't used well, and most people would do best without them. Some people have the talent and inclination to use them well, and they should. If I was asked if, generally, I liked them, I would say I didn't. But the question is meaningless without reference to a particular work.

If the lens produces the vignetting, oh well, not much you can do except photoshop it out, and most people won't bother with that.

If you add the vignetting in yourself, you should be sentenced to death. I've done it before, and I wish I died a horrible death for it ;_;

you can stop down the lens...

People who complain about all that shit are faggots. Either a picture is good or it isn't.

lens vignetting usually looks cool as it's pretty subtle half the time , most people who add it with photoshop go overboard and it just looks shit

Truth. Essentially any effect/treatment of an image can be done to either good or bad result. Vignetting can be overdone, and it seems to have come into vogue in the last couple of years so you see a lot of it being overdone, but whatever. Edge burning has been around from day one in photography, is totally valid, and will outlast this fad of overdoing it so as to fake lens vignetting.

Meh. I use vignetting quite a lot. Very subtle though, much less noticable than in ops pic. I think it's quite nice when you want more focus to what's in the middle of the photo.
>> Anonymous
Vignetting is like most other photo tricks and effects - it's perfectly fine if used judiciously.

In my opinion, usually framing the subject > vignetting but that doesn't always present itself, and other times vignetting really is the way to go. Unless you're shooting on full frame or have really crappy lenses or stacked filters, you're not going to see much. Even then, only time I ever get it on the 5D is at 24mm with a circular polarizer attached or if I'm doing silly things with a lensbaby.

If someone's crowing that you should never have any vignetting, natural or artificial, then they're probably sticking to absolute rules instead of, you know, applying a reasoned and critical eye to the photos they're taking.

Vignetting "just because" probably isn't a good idea, but doing so when it's visually appropriate is.

Vignetting has been used forever. It was done in the darkroom before photoshop even existed. It's a good way to lead the viewers' eye to the center of the frame. Like others have said, it can be overdone but just bitching about it being used at all is faggotry.

Vignetting + HDR + Lens Flare + super-shallow DOF = ULIMAT WIN

Seriously, what the fuck guys? Since you complain about EVERYTHING, what kind of post processing is ok?

Next topic: I think it's better when a photograph is not taken at all and we can just speak in metaphors about the moment while we drink white wine and shove our thumbs in our asses.

>what kind of post processing is ok?

Moderate editing for exposure.
Moderate editing for contrast.
Moderate editing for saturation.
Cropping.

Everything else is fail.

What about dodge & burning? Removing blemishes? Selective contrast? Selective exposure editing?

What about darkening some parts of the photo, kinda like vignetting but not at the corners of the pic?
>> Anonymous
>>186401
Wrong! If it's not done by daguerreotype then it's just fancy-pants trickery.

I see, so as long as you're the one doing it then it's all right.

Am I allowed to enlarge the image, or must it remain forever as a 35mm negative? Tell me oh mighty master of appropriate editing.
