Sounds awesome. Does your source say anything about whether it's going to get more viewfinder coverage to compete with the 100% D300 and D3? Because that'll be pretty damn close to the perfect SLR if it does.

So close in fact I'm a little skeptical of an anonymous poster who doesn't have the final name.

The specs seem too good to be true but doesn't Canon need this model after Nikon fucked shit up with the D300 and D3?

They can't just leave the "low end" pro segment empty.

>>140790- 6.0 / 3.0 fps

JPG and RAW? What the hell, 3 FPS?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
This actually sounds really reasonable and very possible.

The price tag seems just right too... on DPREVIEW there's these fuckin idiots whinging about how it should be 2000 ... the same price as the current 5D...

idiots amaze me.

The only thing i wonder about is its impact on the 1Ds MK III...

cause the impact it'll have on Nikon is pretty obvious. It's gonna fuck SHIT UP :D
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
If this turns out to be true, I'm totally getting one. Just worked out my budget and I'll have enough money saved up to get one when the rumor says it'll happen.

If this happens, it's *vitally important* that I resist the urge to take off the lens and violate my warranty, sexually.
>> Anonymous
I would sell all my gear and buy this in a heartbeat.

I woud keep the 50mm 1.8 because it doesn't make sense to sell it and be like fuck yeah!
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
We'll see in April if this is true. Not long to wait.

The price is about what I would expect. Not too bad. As Jeremo said, it is too much to expect it to be released at the same price as the now heavily discounted 5D is selling at.

There are a lot of people waiting for a new 5D type model, so an updated one should be a good seller for Canon. If they don't release one then Nikon and the rest will be all too happy to gobble up that part of the market.
>> Spring 2008 Canon Rebates Anonymous
Maybe this coincides with the "secret" launch:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1029&thread=27170564

Canon's Spring 2008 rebates.

The 5D has a $200CAD rebate as of now. US prices haven't been announced.

But during the last Canon rebates in winter, it was an instant $300 off, possibility to double it to $600 off if you buy 2 items.

Are they trying to clear off the stocks?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>140821

I forgot to mention that it's still continues the trend of Nikon and Canon leap frogging and wedging each other.

Notice how the price point is between the D300 and D3?? And the features list is somewhat comparable to that wedge as well?

I agree that this will be an important announcement and introduction by Canon... but I don't think it would be the end all, like if the didn't I doubt any of the other companies would gobble up much... not even Nikon, their closest competitor since they don't have anything resembling a 5D equivalent.

The last 6 months has just been Nikon and Canon consolidating their leadership in the market.

I'm not really interested in what the other companies are going to do in response.

Hmm. I just thought of something.

Early June is about when people are going to start getting their big Economic Stimulus checks from Uncle Sam. Could be Canon is timing the release to hit just as every taxpayer in the country has just gotten themselves a big chunk of disposable income.

Don't get it!
If you sell your xti and 10-22 and all your efs stuff, that would get you close to 2k, you could pick up the current 5d for that price now.

When this comes out, i wonder what the used market 5d I price will be... Very very tempting.

Still an unsubstantiated rumor from a random person on the Internet at this point.
>> Anonymous
>>140849
Eventually there will be a 5D II, even if this rumor is false, there is going to be something coming out. It's not like canon is going to walk away from the DSLR market.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>140850
1. A 5D Mk II might come out, but it might not be *this* 5D Mk II.
2. Canon won't likely be getting out of the DSLR market, but they might decide to abandon this particular segment of it. Maybe they'll pull up the xxD line so it's more directly competitive with the 300D but not full-frame.

Just sayin', don't treat this supposed leak as gospel. There are a lot of possibilities.

(That being said: I'm going to hold off on any plans to get a 40D until at least April 22)
>> Anonymous
>>140855
Why the fuck would Canon abandon this segment? They've been cleaning up with the original 5D. Nobody has even had the balls to introduce anything to compete with the 5D.
>> Anonymous
>>140856
Yeah true, there is no nikon competition in this price range. They've got a monopoly, and they won't let go of it until they lose money in this segment (which definately won't happen).
>> Anonymous
>>140855

If you bought it on April 21st you would earn yourself the Steel Balls award in my eyes.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>140856
Maybe the segment's not actually profitable. Maybe they lose a nickel on every 5D sold and just keep it around to drive sales of the full-frame EF lenses, but don't have any particular desire to upgrade it.

Maybe they just want to release a baby 1D instead of a baby 1Ds.

I don't think it's likely that Canon will abandon the 5D's market position, but I've heard a few other people put forth the idea that the 5D and the D80 were both one-time things, never to be repeated. All I'm saying is that a post by some random yahoo on the dpreview forums shouldn't be taken as gospel.

"The CMOS in the new camera will be an entirely new generation"

"The CXR NR system will detail retention at 12800 similar to 3200 on current model, though a 1 2/3 stop improvement is the conservative, stated estimate. Canon hopes to create a "wow" factor with a conservative estimate that surpasses itself in studio/ pro review tests, because they know at this level, you'll be looking there. The philosophy here is that it will create such a "buzz," many who would not consider this camera will consider it. Calling a 2-stop advantage a 2-stop advantage would simply be meeting expectations. FPS will also slightly exceed 6 (and 3), as stated. Canon received negative feedback for the 6.5 FPS quoted in the 40D and learned from their mistake here. (Expect Nikon to underpromise at D3 and above cameras in the future."

"The weather sealing will, in fact, be the same as the current flagship. This is in direct response to Nikon and Pentax. Expect full weather sealing to be a feature in all but low-end (Rebel) bodies in the next cycle. You can thank Pentax for this."

"Battery life will only be improved by just under 10% due to the extra processing required."
>> Anonymous
>>140866
I don't habeeb it!
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>140867
Adding weather sealing to the low-end bodies would be a good way to push sales of the high-end weathersealed lenses.

FWIW I spoke to a Canon rep at a seminar last night. The only info she gave us was that a replacement has been in the works for a long time. It will come out but no time frame. It will not be called 5D Mark II. It is going to be awesome.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>140865

yeah very good point, the only thing i remember that rang true was the early predication of the D60 etc... but that was about 16 hours before the official announcement :D

Funny, my birthday's on April 22.
>> Anonymous
>>140856

The 5D was never the success Canon hoped. Until the heavy, heavy rebates hit, it sold very slowly. The D200 outsold it by magnitudes. I suspect that the small profit (if any) Canon made from the 5D is the reason that a replacement has been so slow in coming.

is that why its usually the staple camera for many studio photographers who want good quality but cant afford/dont need a 1 series.

the amount 5D's sold would be huge, and shouldve easily made it a success.

I've heard from a reliable source that it will have an internal gyroscope that will
1. Keep your camera perfectly stable and level
2. Optionally, in the automatic modes, automatically point your camera towards interesting subjects and properly compose them.

You'll optionally be able to assign the Direct Print button to turn on AutoCompose.

I can't reveal my sources for obvious reasons, but they're reliable. Damn reliable.

According to a source I am unwilling to disclose, the new 5D will be called the 7D. It will have all the features listed in OP, but one VERY important one that he left out:

TWO DIRECT PRINT BUTTONS.

That's right, there are now TWO direct print buttons! Canon has discovered that many photographers have two or more printers, and will be taking advantage of this market. By allowing you to connect two printers at the same time and print to both simultaneously, photographers can save almost three seconds each time they decide to print doubles.

Will require Canon USB-21A USB splitter cable ($99 MSRP) and two compatible DUALPRINT(tm) printers.
