hello /p/retentious, i just came across a really good deal on a XTi from a friend. however, it doesnt come with the lens kit. i'm aware that AF lenses are on the pricey side of the spectrum.. since that's the case, can you recommend me a decent wide angle lens that will be worth the money? or do any of you have any tips for someone just getting into SLR?

Hmm. Hard to get wide without the kit lens without spending some serious money. Your best bet might just be to pick up a kit lens on eBay--they're going for under $100.

In general, any Canon lens you slap on that sucker's gonna be great. I personally have the 35mm f/2.0 for normal, the 50mm f/1.8 for medium tele or when I really need that extra fraction of a stop, and the cheap-ass 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6 for when I want to stalk people from the bushes.

lots of choices, for starters

tokina 12-24 coupled with a 50mm 1.8
canon 10-22 "" "" "" "" ""
canon 17-40 (lol)
canon 17-55 (do not confuse with kit lens)
tamron 17-50
or the kit lens even.

read reviews on photozone.de to see what fits best your quality/price ratio.

the 17mm ones aren't so hot on 1.6 crop for wide angle, but 27mm are somewhat decent, for an all-rounder lens... I guess ยบ_o

Get a 2nd-hand 18-55. It isn't a pro lens, but /for the money/ it's a good start. Don't let gearheads and pixelpeepers make you feel guilty into not buying professional-grade stuff right off the bat. The most important piece of equipment you'll ever need is between your ears.

seconded, the kit lens works which is what matters when you're starting out. once you use it and you figure out why it sucks and what you like and don't like about it then you'll be in a much better position to understand what lenses you actually want to spend some serious money on.

that and if you end up getting bored of photography and shelving your camera then you didn't waste a lot of money
