V570 Anonymous
Hey, /p/. Kodak V570 for a trip to New York, and me starting to learn how to be a decent photographer. Yes or no?

no

Reasons for no?

for the same price, you can get a better camera. Fuji F30 & Canon A630 comes to mind.

It's on sale at Geeks.com for only $200. Any other good cameras in that price range I should consider first?

This kodak is actually not too bad.
First P&S that has 2 actual lens, taking at the same time to make a true pano.

If you want a convenient P&S, takes pano a lot, go for it since its only $200.
If you want more toys (read options), look further such as panasonic, canon, nikon, etc.

No, I recommend Canon, there are cameras that are in the same price range that offer more features and frankly are better cameras.

Okay, here's the scoop. My parents are willing to split the price with me, so now my price range is ~$300. I was considering the Kodak V610, but now, I have a lot more options. Suggestions within this range?
>> Photon
Depends what you are going to take mostly.

Normal snapshots? Street shots? Nature? Random stuff? Size of camera?

Canon PowerShot SD1000, Canon PowerShot S3 IS, S2 IS, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8, Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3, Pentax Optio T30, Kodak V1003. All these camera are very easy to use.

But I recommend the Canon and Panasonic models since they have great zooms (10x-12x) and have manual controls so that you can learn the settings.

Shy away from Sony stuff. They are all shit.

I'd be taking pictures of friends and family, views of the city, and PLENTY of random stuff. A camera that could shoot at night and in dark decently would also be a huge plus. Form factor isn't terribly important. A super-chunky SLR would be annoying, but hey, if the features are good, it's fine. Of those listed, or others, what would be the best for the things I mentioned?

Panasonic FZ8 or Canon S3IS. Both fits onto your price range.

They both are similar camera, with manual controls, long exposures (30secs), quick (relatively), long zoom.

Go to your local electronic store and try how they feel in your hands...although I dont think you can find the panasonic everywhere.

For a compact, point-and-shoot camera that takes decent night shots: nothing beats the Fujifilm F30. Go read stuff about it and try it out.

After reading some reviews the Panasonic DMCFZ8 seems like a really good deal, but I'm going to settle for the FZ7K, it's older, slightly less advanced brother. Fewer pixels overall, but it's got all the features I want and at $280 on Newegg, it's a steal. I'll be ordering tonight unless someone wants to stop me.

The FZ7's nice too. Have fun :)

Ordered. Found the silver version of it for only $260, and it came with a free 1GB SD card. I also ordered a 2GB 150x write speed SD card for myself. :D
