Hello /p/. I am studying abroad next year and I want to learn about photography during the year. I used the best buy and cnet "find the right camera for you" things and I arrived at the Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ5 both times so I come to you to humbly ask for your opinion.
I want to be able to take wide shots for landscapes but I also want a decent zoom for more natural pictures of people. The TZ5 does both without having to worry about things like changing lenses and such which might be too technical for me just yet.
tl:dr; Lumix TZ5, good first camera for someone interested in photography?
Thanks for any help.

No, absolutely not. It doesn't even have the most basic manual controls.

Question: Are you willing to process to raw files, i.e. take two minutes for each pic you actually want to use out of what you shot and "develop" it with a software program?

For a P&S, the TZ5 is quite decent. Perhaps slightly overpriced, but okay. Compare with the G9 though.

The one big thing that you will never be able to get over (most likely) is the itty bitty sensor and the lack of a proper viewfinder as well as the flexibility of an SLR.

Buy a used xt for the same price.

the lumix is for things like basic basic basic photography. like, taking pictures of your kids/dog photography.
canon s5 if you don't want an slr.

yes. I mean, I'll probably have generic auto pictures to post on facebook but for pictures of really cool landscapes and city life I would be willing to mess with them if I find a place to learn how to.

comparing the G9 right now, thanks

I don't want my camera to be too bulky as it will also have to double as a regular day-to-day camera.
