I guess just the side of the building and that big tree. I liked the "old time" look of the building.

>I guess just the side of the building and that big tree. I liked the "old time" look of the building.
Did you also like the "old time" look of the building in the background? The parking lot? The car over on the left? The sign? The power lines? The fire hydrant?

Rule #1 in photographic composition: Anything in the picture that doesn't help your picture is hurting it. Get closer.

Also, your sky is completely blown out.

seriously ac you spout so much crap that you cant back up. How do you know what the intentions of the photographer were to make such a harsh critique? Just because a photographer doesn't fit into your "square hole, square peg" level of understanding doesn't make it bad.

uh, if the OP liked the old time look of the second picture he should make that the focus of the picture. as is, theres no real focus. and the other crap just distracts from the building. might have been able to do a old vs new type thing or whatever, but theres a tree in the way. the tree could have been the focus, but its a tree. in a parking lot. and the building then distracts.

why does there have to be one? the good thing about these photos is that the op hasnt simply made portraits of the buildings.

The pictures are still boring.

>>57844
You like banality? Why, there's lots of it, on every corner of the world, that's why we invented art... oh.

>>57863
Because a photo of uninteresting things, without any sort of visual ooomph, and without any sort of message, no matter how simple it might've been, is just a boring photo.

Flickr tends to be pretty trivial as well.

I don't see what point you're trying to reach here: he wants critique? His photos are nothing out of this world. That's the truth. Anyone can see it. Are you going to call them good photos? They ARE pretty mundane.

Right, okay, let's see your qualifications.

Here's mine: I've taken tens of thousands of photographs, received praise on quite a few of them from both biased (my mom, my girlfriend) and non-biased (random assholes on /p/, random assholes on flickr) sources. I've got a bookshelf full of books on photography and books OF photography, and I make a beeline to the photography section of any art museum I visit.

And all of this adds up to... precisely bupkis in the grand scheme of things. My opinion with regards to the aesthetics of a photo are exactly equal to any yahoo pulled off the street. If I say a photo looks lame and every other yahoo pulled off the street says the photo's awesome, then it'd be a good idea to discount my particular opinion as not being worth much.

Hell, if everyone thought exactly like I do, William Wegman would have had to eat his wiemaraners to survive long ago because he sure as hell wouldn't have ever been able to sell a print. Obviously that's not the case.

The OP asked what we thought. I told him what I thought, and gave some suggestions for improvement. This is another way of saying "I gave him some tips on how to take pictures that I, AC, personally, would like." I can't speak for how to make pictures that everyone would like, and neither can you.

All I have is my subjective opinion backed up by some (really quite limited, overall) experience. That's all you have as well.

And in my opinion, those shots were boring.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>57848
Still kinda meh. I mostly see curb. Looks like there's something interesting hiding behind the bushes, but it's hiding behind the bushes, so I mostly just see curb.

>>57851
A bit better, although I'd have angled to get less well-manicured-lawn and less of the big burnt-out chunk of sky there.

>>57873
Also better. Got some serious blue tinting going on there, though. Might want to R the proverbial FM to find out how to set a custom white balance.

Pro tip: Read the next fucking line. Since you missed it, I'll repeat it:
>>>And all of this adds up to... precisely bupkis in the grand scheme of things.

I.e., the fact that my background means nothing was MY WHOLE FUCKING POINT. I'm just a random guy on the Internet. My opinions have the same weight as any other random guy's on the Internet. If the person I'm responding to disagrees with me, that's fine, that's their call. But if they ask for my opinion (which the OP did), I'm gonna give them my opinion.

If I tell them that I think a photo's boring, that's just one data point that they can use to gauge the overall gestalt opinion on their photo. Another guy might write back that the photo is awesome. Maybe that other guy is just saying that the photo's awesome because he's a pissy little bitch who has developed a personal grudge against me because I thought *his* photo sucked. These are all things that the OP should take into account.
>> Harrumph

No i'm pissed at you cos you hang shit on every pic ... I don't mind constructive criticism .. you're just a outright cunt and one one of the many as you say >random assholes on /p/, random assholes on flickr

A lot of people are just not going to want to post anything because they will think that you will trash them ...

>No i'm pissed at you cos you hang shit on every pic
Again, argument would work better if I weren't praising pictures in two separate threads right here on the main page.

I really don't think anyone out there is really going "Well, I *want* to post this picture to /p/... but what if AC doesn't like it? I'll be absolutely crushed!"

If so--if they *really* fear the criticism of one random, semi-anonymous computer geek on a message board known primarily for lolcats and pedophilia--then by God they need to reevaluate their life choices because they've taken a wrong fucking turn somewhere.

You know if the OP opens with "meh", the pictures are bound to be shit.

Which they are. I'm not exaggerating.

However, that's not the end of things. Everybody takes shit pictures sometimes - the hard part is admitting it. Now go look for something else to take pictures of, or be more careful the next time you take a picture of this. I'd get more specific, but ac's already done that and you've ignored him.

Where did all these "It's meant to be boring" idiots come from? These pictures are crap, man, and of course that's just our subjective opinions, but they are to be taken for what they are. We are all interested in photography here, some with more experience than others.

To me, there is absolutely NOTHING interesting in these pictures. If I want to see a ordinary building and a ordinary tree with ordinary colours and composition, I just have to open the door and walk outside, like op seems to have done when they took these.

Protip to Harrumph: don't get a nick if you're going to make an ass out of yourself. Go take some decent pictures and stfu.

Jesus Christ, we're all entitled to an opinion, and in ac's case, his opinion is particularly well-developed and backed.

He's one of the better photographers on /p/, both technically and aesthetically.

I feel like you guys are bashing AC when he's trying to help. These photos suck, it doesn't even look like the photographer tried. And as much as you guys want to plug your ears and say "well, that's just your opinion. And I think your opinion is stooopid," AC's comments were nothing more than what any learned photographer would say.

OP and defenders of OP: feel free to continue taking photos like this. But nobody's ever going to buy them except your mommy, you're never going to receive any real praise, and I'd be surprised if these things even got page views.
