Will be shooting a battle of the bands, sort of. Equipment:
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6
430 EX flash

I'm planning to go either with the Tamron or the Nifty-50 all the way. Won't use flash unless the situation calls for it (group shots, post-concert shots, etc since flash blinds everyone). Thoughts and opinions? Should I just leave the 55-200?

tl;dr: shooting a concert.

Picture kinda related, a drama I shot two weeks ago.

What sort of venue is it?
Is there a stage?
How will the room be lit?

I'd probably use the 17-50, with the flash at 60-75' (with bounce card)
Setting depend on ambient lighting etc.

I say, yeah, leave the 55-200 though I was able to get some awesome shots with a borrowed 70-300 f/4-5.6 and D70s in shutter priority and used that most of the time. My only other lens during that time was the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 so it wasn't much of a difference in terms of aperture. If you've got a good bag that can carry all and don't mind the weight too much, up to you.

It's a multi-purpose hall. Yes, there will be a stage. No, the organisers are mum on the ambient lighting so I have to guess. Reminds me of a fashion show last year where I was in the committee itself and they didn't tell me they will have a huge light shining until the day itself, which caused me to leave the 18-55 at home and missed quite a number of wide-angle shots.

What do you mean flash at 60-75', inches?

I'll see how close to the stage I can get.

Heh, actually, there was no stage and I was right next to them playing. Made some great close ups. But now that I think back, I never really zoomed in and kept it at 70 cause of the drop in aperture so I guess the 50 will do. Best tip to give you: Get as close as fucking possible.

Oh right, Well stage height, and how close you are will be the deciding factor on the lenses.
You definately will not need the 50mm. The fixed length will just hinder you.

60-75 degrees forward tilt. The flash will be pointing basically vertical, but the bounce card will let enough diffused light hit the subject.

When I shoot at gigs I tend to use focal lengths between 35-100. Under 35 is almost always to wide for me. But thats due to the venues stage being raising high etc.

Depending on the lighting; if the stage is spot lit, etc, i'd probably set my camera to something along these lines, and then change the settings if nessassery

aperture: ƒ/5.6
shutter: 1/5th
iso: 400
flash: 1/4th -7

Reasom for the shutter speed being so slow is to let ambient light in to make the photo more interesting.

Getting to know a band and/or stage crew before a concert is the best advice I can give, well over what equipment to take with you.

I was able to get up on stage and place a wireless flash on stage while the band was still setting up during this concert. The white light cast on his was from the flash.

If it were me, I'd use the Tamron and bring the 55-200 just in case. Most of the time, events like these use huge lights that 2.8 is more than enough even without flash.

crank up the ISO, overexpose by a stop, shoot RAW and bring the exposure down in post-processing to minimize noise. rear-curtain sync if you use flash. shooting wide with flash is also pretty fun. pic related.
