Hey, you found upright versions of your pictures! Good job! I was worried that you only had sideways ones for a bit. =/

I mostly like these. I especially like the fact that they're not all sideways.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
In the raw editor, take one of these images and slide the temperature towards the right. Then continue to post process.

Also a diversity of composition would benefit you.

>>253875
I want to like this one.

Some fill flash would do wonders, and COOL PICTURES ARE COOL.

I was kind of thinking that too, but I dunno. Given the subject matter, the sort of pale blueish pallor that their skin has kind of fits.
>> Syphilis !SC5mMmABng
>>253893
It would. Unfortunatly I am bound, like many others, by money, and I'm saving for a 50mm1.4... so no decent fill flash yet
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
40D's onboard flash makes a good fill.

Wow, Declan.

You're great.

>diversity of composition would benefit you

also these shots dont really tell us much about those subcultures youre trying to capture. you just got some people's faces, which isn't very informative.

and for portraits, i find that a bit too much of the faces are out of focus, particularly for example on

50mm on crop is NOT SUITABLE FOR THIS SORT OF WORK.

go find a 28 or wider.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
Your on-board flash is fine for this kind of stuff until you can afford better. I use mine on my 30D all the time for fill light when I don't have my 430 handy. Pop open the manual and learn how to make it do what you want, and more importantly find out what settings make it do what you like by playing with it at home first.

shut up, butterfly.

also, these are decent, and i like the concept (sort of..) but, yeah. switch up the compositions, and especially the portrait lengths. clothing sort of defines what subset you're in, yeah? so get more than just head-and-shoulders shots. full or 3/4 length portraits.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>254217
Shut up because i'm right and you're agreeing with me? Ok. Nothing wrong with these photos, just needs more in frame.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>254221

shut up because you can do more than head-and-shoulders with 50mm (though you can plainly use one). in fact, at 80mm equivalent, it's perfect for full length portraits.

so a 50mm lens would be exactly the right lens to use in this situation.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>254223
The distance you need to be away from the subject to get 1/2 length with a 50mm on crop is too long for general street use. Besides, if its so easy, why didnt he?
>> Syphilis !SC5mMmABng
because I am inexperienced and you are my all encompassing god?
</sarcasm>

Ok, so temperature color and differentiation of compositions, along with fill flash. Anything else?

I feel bad about this, but I look at your subjects and all I can think is

Pull back get a wider framing, show some of their environment, show more of their character.
What do we learn about these people and what defines their sub-culture?
What other sub-cultures will you be documenting?

The first two have interesting compositions, the third would if her whole face was in focus. For third and all rest: re-shoot (smaller aperature on #3 this time though k?)

To be pretty simple and clear.
You are just putting the peoples faces in the whole frame. If it was an assigment for relating subcultures [In my POV it should feature clothing and places that said subcultures go to], getting a 50mm and filling the frame with their faces is not a very good idea.
But you don't need to OMFG BUY ANOTHER LENS CAUSE YOUR GEAR IS NOT SUITABLE MEHMEH, just work around with what you have, you can get cool full-body shots with 50mm. If you take hel-looks.com [pic related] for example, all shots are the same, full-body 50mm with dead center composition. I'd say... At least I can see the places and the clothes, just get your example [full-face framing] and hellooks example [full-body framing] and be more creative : D
Explore faces, looks and things that would look cool in the background. It's not that hard, just let it flow.

Definitely take some steps back, even if it isn't full-body. Plus, body language says a lot on these people.

I say this because of some friends I have who have basically figured out how to do reasonably-composed headshots and now do absolutely nothing but said headshots. They go on about their genius and everybody else wonders why we should be impressed. Please, for the children, variety of composition.
