Hey /p/ i will admit to being new to this whole photography genre. So I would like to know in you guy's/gals opinions whats the best Slr cameras for a grand and under ?
>> Anonymous
If you are asking the /p/ board what DSLR to get, you really don't need one. Go buy a A720is Powershot for $200. Spend $800 on a couple of 8 balls of coke. Go to a strip club. Make alot of new friends. Take pictures of your new friends and post those.

Those will be better, more interesting shots than you'll ever get from your $1000 DSLR kit and taking pictures of your cat.

You need to learn control. Also, lighting with flash.

Tripod + remote shutter release + flash works well. I did that once. Although, technically my girlfriend was the one who fired the camera. But that was only because I needed one hand free to hold myself up and the other hand free to choke her.

Everyone has a Canon. Any other good brands for the price op listed ?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>110096
Nikon. D40 and D80 can be had for under a grand. Of the two, definitely go with the D80.

Also a bunch of Olympus models, and I think the lower-end Pentaxes, if you're into that sort of thing. And the Alpha A100 seems to be under a kilobuck nowadays, inb4butterfly.
>> Anonymous
>>110096

In order of price, in general:

Olympus < Pentax < Sony < Nikon < Canon

Same can be said about quality, lololol burn

But in all seriousness, Pentax 2 lens kit can be hand for under 900$ easily. I'm pretty sure they go for 700$ even. Or maybe I'm thinking of Olympus. I don't care enough about them to remember.

Nikon and Canon tend to swap back and forth with the top spot in that list. I.e., until the D40 came out, the Rebel series was cheaper than anything Nikon had. And Canon and Nikon have both sort of positioned their cameras to interleave, so a direct price comparison is tricky. I.e.,
D40 < XT < D40x < XTi < D80 < 40D < D300 < 1D III < D3 < 1Ds III
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>110108

That's true. It's hard to make a comparison because of the way they've priced and designed the feature sets and every so often the updates mean we have to re-evaluate it all once again.

I'd be worried if any manufacturer ever had true or permanent dominance of the market. It's always a good sign if they are leapfrogging over each other all the time in a truly competitive race.

I've never understood the fanboy rage and wails whenever they creep back and forth in the "positioning". It's not like the equipment that has been out for years suddenly turns into cheese and can't take the same good photos it has for years.

>>110111

I can understand the fanboy rage for the D40/D40x fiasco.

It will get better when the D60 and 450D duke it out.

I've handled and shot with both a d40 and a k100d, the pentax smokes it out of the water. I honestly have no idea why everybody new automatically goes for the d40, enjoy your subpar quality.

Sony A100, better performance than the Nikons and canons at its price with just as much potential.

Anyone who says the D40/XTi is better is LYING.
>> Anonymous
>>110145

Don't listen to the pathetic and ridiculous Sony fanboy. He's been trying to push people on to that aborted fetus of a system for ages now - probably to make himself feel good about buying it.

Sony is not a good system, buy Nikon or Canon.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>110145
Even if the A100's a better camera (and I'm not conceding that, but I'm too lazy to research), Nikon and Canon both have better *systems*, with a greater lens selection and more room for advancement when it comes time to upgrade camera bodies.

yea, completely ignore the pentax with much better ergonomics, ccd based shake reduction, and much better overall quality than the d40 at the same price. i mean cmon, everybody has a nikon and canon, they must be good! (protip: everybody's a fucking idiot consumer)

Nah its fine, i justify it to myself by looking at people with D40, D40x, D80, D70, D50, XT, XTis who all got worse deals.

Everything else you said is invalid for consumers.

And finally, its the photographer that makes the shot, not the camera.

I think it's probably best to stick with one system for as long as you can, whatever that system may be. That way all your accessories and lenses will stay with you as you work your way up and build the kit. Also you'll be more familiar with the same system if you're not chopping and changing too often.

Yeah, I think it is. They swapped over to that internal motor system and large mount for EOS pretty early on. I think it's 20 years of compatible lenses now.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>110173
Nope.
Nikon F-mount: 1959
Pentax K-mount: 1975
Minolta/Sony A-mount: 1985
Canon EF-mount: 1987
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>110176

Ah, there we go.

Is that including the full compatibility without any weirdness? I know some mounts did get altered some over time although that are sort of still compatible.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>110176
Ah cool, but doesnt the F-Mount have issues with newer/older lenses on older/newer bodies? They wont meter correctly and things like that?

And the pentax mount is still being used? I thought they were 4:3 now or is that identical?
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>110178

Pentax use their own mount instead. Seems that Olympus couldn't get them on board.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>110177
>>110178
Pentax and Alpha are compatible back and forth. There are some issues with old third-party K-Mount lenses fuxx0ring your camera if you try to mount it on an autofocus K-mount camera, but that's fairly minor and nonexistent if you stick with Pentax lenses.

Canon is compatible back and forth with the exception of EF-S lenses, which only mount on post-Rebel APS-C digitals. And, like Pentax, there are some issues with old third-party lenses on recent bodies. I briefly owned a 135mm telephoto that wouldn't work at anything other than max aperture on my Digital Rebel, but worked perfectly on the film Rebel. But again, if you stick with Canon lenses, you can use the latest EF lens on the earliest EOS 650 and the Mk I 50mm f/1.8 works perfectly on the 1Ds Mk III.

Nikon has the huge compatibility chart of death. If you want to fully use all the features of each lens, you'd better have a body and lens made fairly recently. And I'd bet a nickel that their medium to long term plan is to move all of their lenses to in-lens autofocus motors, which means that even the pros will have to upgrade their lenses to keep autofocus when they upgrade their camera body. So they're somewhat compatible all the way back to the 50s, but not in the same way that Canon, Sony, or even Pentax are compatible throughout the system.

What's /p/'s take on Panasonic? I recently bought a FZ18, and I'm getting some really nice images out of it, as long as the ISO stays low. The noise is awful on anything past 600 or so.
>> Anonymous
to someone new to photography, i'd advise something that can run well on its own, maybe a Rebel or a Nikon D40.

If you're really looking to drop a grand, then a Nikon D40X with the stock 18-55mm plus the new 55-200mm VR lens isn't a bad way to go.

Panasonic make cameras?
>> Anonymous
panasonic make a lot of mid-range consumer cameras
>> Anonymous
>>110300
The best cameras in the higher-levels of small sensor cameras. Lower-down, (A-series and below) Canon is the only answer, but at the level of advanced compacts and bridge cameras, Panasonic's win out. Certainly the best lenses in the category.

You have to shoot raw to take advantage of their win, though. Panasonic's physical engineers are great, but their software engineers make horrible JPEG engines.

The reason the noise is awful is because of the small size of the sensor; any other camera with a 1/2.5" sensor is also going to suck there.

Heh, thanks, that's pretty reassuring. This is my first camera, and about a week ago, I didn't know what an Fstop, or ISO was, so it's good to hear I picked a good one. I did a fair bit of research to be sure, too.

The Leica lenses are very very nice, according to my photographer friend.
