Any advice on getting good airplane shots?

Taken with a Canon PowerShot A80 on auto.

Yup. Digital zoom is analagous to using the zoom feature in MS Paint. I dislike the fact that manufacturers have used (optical zoom)x(digital zoom) = total zoom. It's quite deceptive. It's all about the optical zoom.

Would they still play "Rock You Like a Hurricane" at an air show in Japan?

i would like tips for airplane shots too. i get asked to shoot a surprising number of airshows for my cute little photojournalism side job and this is the best photo i've ever gotten of planes flying. and this wasn't even for work, it was on vacation in florida on south beach. SO many titties. holy shit.

anyway this photo is gayer than hell. biplanes are not exciting anymore AND they don't need the little smoke trails to fly. so. TIPS PLIX.

I think to take *good* airplane shots you're probably going to need a longer lens than your A80 has, ideally with IS. Which will mean either upgrading to an SLR with an IS lens or something like the S3IS or S5IS.

I use a 70-300mm VR (digital equiv 105-450mm) works wonders.

The music I recognized:

Top Gun Anthem
Star Trek First Contact theme
Danger Zone
The Air Force Song ("Off we go, into the wild blue yonder")

I didn't recognize anything else.

Imagine, if you will, being in a crowd of around 80,000 people...and you're about 25-30 centimeters taller than most everyone. It was kind of surreal.

This is one of the great things abour being in Japan - it adds like 4 or 5 inches to your height. Although smacking your head on hadlebars in trains/buses and because you thought that a certain door was high enough for you to pass through without you bending over, isn't exactly fun.

Pardon the newbie comment, but...what is IS? Image stabilization?
