I'm getting paid $400 to photograph my friends band, im thinking of doing some really pro looking studio portrait type shots.
The equipment i have so far is: a canon 580ex2 speedlight flash, and a canon 40d. thats it!
my question is - using this equipment (im willing to spend a little extra if need be) what kind of portrait shots can i do? any ideas? its my first time ever doing anything like it.
I was thinking of using the speedlight wirelessly and positioning it at weird angles and stuff and getting some dramatic shadows and stuff, but thats about it!

Also i've only got a 50mm lens. Any advice/hints/suggestions to coming up with some stuff that will inspire awe?

Pic related - its her at a gig.

Don't try to do anything fancy or new; for starters, the band obviously likes your style or else they wouldn't be paying out $400 for a sitting fee. Also, people playing around with a new style usually produce inferior work. Just go and do your thing.

Also, props on the just-one-lens.

Also, resize.

Use your instinct, what do you think looks like good shots of musicians at gigs? After all for them to be willing to pay you 400$, they must think you have some talent, keep doing whatever convinced them to want you.

Oh wow. Enjoy screwing your friend over, how does that feel?

OP here

i think the only reason they're paying me is because i am a great bullshitter and i convince everyone that my photos are good, even if i know they arent.
case in point, this party i went to, i took all these photos without a flash and using only natural pisspoor light, they all came out grainy as fuck, but i managed to convince everyone they were awesome.
It's kind of like a novelty. But i think one day everyone will discover i am actually a fraud.
