I had a crazy thought, influenced in part by the webcomic asofterworld.com. For those not familiar, check it out. You might like it, or it might make you raaaage. It's up to you I guess.

Now, I don't think the photography or writing of asofterworld is that great. Sometimes the photo doesn't even fit the text at all. Often it smacks of the ambiguous, mysterious hipster. Also, it sticks with the same three-panel format for everything.

Basically, I want to try my hand at this... I want to start working on a short series, a three-off perhaps. Sell printed editions in addition to publishing pages online in a webcomic format.

I might be able to something this big alone, at least for the first arc, since I've got a bunch of material stockpiled, but I think after I run through that, I'll need someone collaborating with me for the writing and story. But I do think I could shoot and edit the visual side of it. I've always loved comics, but I've never been able to draw them.

Anyways, just wanted to announce my plans, get any thoughts ya'll might have.

I might be in for the writing/story side. What creative direction are you thinking about taking?

I'm sorry man, unless you're in Austin or something, I dunno if that'd work out. I need to work with someone in person, hang out, smoke a bowl, brainstorm, that sort of thing.

I was thinking, and I think I'll take the Judd Apatow-ish advice of "do what you know," make it about a photographer protagonist (which would sort of help and reinforce the overall concept of a comic told through photographs) in the same vein as Scott Pilgrim or something. Pop culture, music, hipsters, photography, college, relationshit... the stuff I know best. I think there's lots of good visual material to cover, and I can do some funny things with it. I don't want to make some emo cutter comic about how dramatic and terrible life is, I'd rather poke fun and be a little more lighthearted, with only the occasional bit of melancholic meandering. Sorta like real life, I guess.

Sort of weird to post it on an international forum then, but I definitely understand where you're coming from.

Good luck, you sound like you've got a pretty good thing to go with by yourself there.

Oh, and "write what you know" doesn't come from Judd Apatow. It's from Hemingway. (Odd how the two textbook advices for photography and writing came from, respectively, Capa and Hemingway, who knew each other and were friends. I just realized that.)

Oh, sorry, I missed the "just wanted to announce" part both times, and just saw it.

Good luck again.

Oh, I wasn't implying that Apatow created that idea or anything, just that he's a recent shining example for me of a really good storyteller.
