I had this wacky idea to take a picture of every insect I see in my yard this summer. Not for any artsy fartsy reason, just because I love bugs. So I come here seeking camera advice. I don't have a very large budget, but I want a nice camera and realize its not gonna be $100. Any ideas?

A good camera (read: DSLR) with a macro lens long enough to shoot insects without scaring them is going to cost quite a lot. But since it's probably bright, you can get away with any point-and-shoot that provides decent macro capability at the telephoto end of the lens. I think dpreview and cameralabs have tests with figures on macro capability of various compact cameras.
