This one looks too Mypsace-imitating-fashion-advertisements. Process a little differently and this could work. If this is a staged portrait and not a candid one, having her ditch the sunglasses would help.

The one in the other thread is much better, and I can't really find anything wrong with it or say why I like it. It *might* look better if you slightly burned that bright background; I'm not sure but I think it's worth a try.

General comments: scratch the borders, or replace them with a neutral shade of gray. I've heard that viewing a photograph against such a color brings it out better, but I've never tried it.

... and you just posted two more whilst I was typing. All comments in my post were meant to refer to the first one in this thread.

I don't know what's wrong with this one, but there is something wrong with it. At first I thought it was the saturation, but then I saw the pool looking all funny.

Go back to your RAW file and try another approach.

Model is good, lighting is good, overall composition is good. Background is insanely distracting. This turns from "pretty friend" to "random schmuck in car" as soon as the eyes go off the friend.

"The one in the other thread is much better"

Yeah, well, I fucked that up. I can't seem to delete it so here it is.

Ouch.

"Model is good, lighting is good, overall composition is good. Background is insanely distracting. This turns from "pretty friend" to "random schmuck in car" as soon as the eyes go off the friend."

Do you think throwing in farther out of focus would have helped? I think a slightly faster shutter speed could have helped too, but maybe the different fill light/ambient light ratio wouldn't have worked.

"This one looks too Mypsace-imitating-fashion-advertisements."

Heh. We don't call her Glamour Girl for no reason.

"General comments: scratch the borders, or replace them with a neutral shade of gray. I've heard that viewing a photograph against such a color brings it out better, but I've never tried it."

Great idea, thanks. When there is both white and black at the edges of the photograph I never know what color to use. Gray, should have thought of that.

"pool looking all funny."

Right you are. I'll give it another shot in photoshop. Thanks for your imput, greatly appreciated.

>Do you think throwing in farther out of focus would have helped?
Yeah, I do. Put that f/1.8 goodness to work.

>I think a slightly faster shutter speed could have helped too,
To darken the background? That might help. A lower ISO would work fine, too, and obviously improve the image quality, not that it matters at normal display sizes.

Now that you've shot it, try lightly burning the background in Photoshop.

But, yeah, you'd obviously have to slow down the shutter to increase the depth of field, if that's what you mean.

>but maybe the different fill light/ambient light ratio wouldn't have worked.
Could you explain what you did, lighting-wise?
>> street-pirate

On board flash. Probably powered down, but I can't remember.

"To darken the background? "

Yeah, and the highlights on the side of his face.

Keep the highlights, IMO. The contrast will be interesting.

With the lighting, I meant more what this ratio of fill to ambient was you were going for. Not a literal numerical ratio, but you know what I mean.
