I think 21mm is too wide for torso-up shots. Set your kit zoom to 21mm and try it, but I think you'll get rather weird-looking perspective (unless you're specifically aiming for that).
The 40mm, on the other hand, isn't that much different from your existing 50/1.4. Maybe you should try the 31/1.8? Although I don't see the problem in doing torso-up shots with a 50mm unless you're in a very cramped space (but I've seen people do that with a 85mm on 2x crop olympus in a studio)
