tl;dr what's better, a 20D or a 400D?

I bought a S5 IS about a month ago hoping to hold me over before I had to take the SLR plunge but I just can't stand its lack of wheels and low light performance so I'm gonna sell it.

I'm looking at used bodies and it looks like the 20D's and 400D's are about the same price. Any reason to stay away from the older 20D? The main thing I liked about the 20D was the 5 FPS continuous as opposed to the 400D's 3 FPS, that's pretty important to me.

Also, is the 400D worth going for over the 350D for a first body?

I was planning on starting with a nifty fifty then saving for a few months for the 70-200mm f/4L USM

Glass before body.

Your body can quickly become outdated, but good glass you'll always use.

if you read the thread youd know that they are about the same price, thats not the issue.

Don't forget that Nifty Fifty is a Nifty Eighty on a canon 1.6 crop sensor

except the 20D fills its buffer after 6 RAW and 23 JPG

the 400D fills it at 10 RAW and 27 JPG

still 2 frames faster i guess lulz

Get whichever one feels best in your hand. IMO, pre-40D (read: pre molded grip) x0D series and the xx0D series both feel horrible, but get whichever works best for you. Look into other brands, too, if you're not set on the particular EF 50mm and 70-200mm in question, but are just looking for a 50mm and a 70-200.

I bought a 400D first and sold it for a 20D after a few months. I still use the 20D - it's yards better than the 400.

Save another $100 or so and get a used 30d, shutter is rated for 100k vs 20ds 50k.

He could sell the guitar he bought in high school to make girls like him, but now sits in the corner of his closet. Then he could get a 30d. He said 400d or 20d, never said anything about $400
