Because the shadow blocked up completely, I'd have pointed the camera more to the right. Though I'd rather just have some detail in the shadow.
IMO, selective desaturation never works. If you feel you just have to do it, soften the edges of the color, and don't leave it fully saturated. It's very gimmicky and cliche, and usually used for sappy wedding/engagement photos.
I think the style you are looking for is spontaneous portraits.
