there's an expectation of lines leading to interest that is thwarted by the position of the subject.

Seems like a scene where you have a decent amount of control, why not move the chairs out of the way? Then place something on the table were the lines are leading to create 2 subjects each with their own set of lines leading to interests. EI the banister floor etc leading to the boy in the chair and that odd frame work leading to the chair.

Also maybe raise the camera slightly? Currently the banister is almost on the bottom third line. The almost part is slightly displeasing to the eye in this image.

I like the lighting on the figure.

Overall the composition is rather watery while the possibility of a better one evident.
