One of the first things I did after I bought my first camera was to look up the law on photography, as it pertains in Australia at least.
I know I can photograph anything I can see from a public area, given that it's not CP, and I know that I don't have to delete any pictures I've taken while on private property, like a mall, but it is polite to stop taking pictures when asked and persisting to take pictures of a person who's asked me to stop could be constituted as harassment.
Also, Assault and Battery against my person is not allowed, under any circumstances. If someone wants me to stop taking pictures then they have to ask me, and if I refuse then they have to call the police. If they touch me, I am allowed to defend myself, simple as that - and that goes for security guards as well. Only police have the lawful ability to physical remove me from private property for taking pictures, and even they don't have the legal right to delete any photos I've already taken - that constitutes destruction of evidence, a very bad crime in the eyes of any Judge.
Know your rights, and be prepared to defend them against the ignorant.
