Ok, so I'm planning on getting into photography, know little yet getting into it. As for Lenses I need to know what I need and what I don't need from this list.

D80 + Kit lens
24-85mm f/2.8
18-200mm vr
Sigma 30mm f/1.4
50mm f/1.8
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

beginners only need two lenses: kit 18-55 and 50 mm prime. those two taught me everything I know about photography and I still rarely take off the prime.

Different focal lengths.

The 50/1.8 would be a medium telephoto lens, for portraits, or other situations where a slightly compressed perspective is desirable, or when reach is needed.

Normal primes (Between 28 and 35mm for a DX sensor) are workhorse lenses, suitable for pretty much everything.

Same reason you get a zoom, except you get better, faster lenses that force you to work and visualize in a better wy.

ok thanks I'll go with 30mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.8, and kit lens then, as for everything (aperature / speed / what id need / what f/*.* **mm id need) would be taught from those right?

alright, hope i learn as much as you did.

Thanks everyone, I'll save the expensive stuff for later then.

Unless what you need is insane wide angles or insanely long telephotos, yep.
