Fixed vs. zoom dilemma Anonymous
I am upgrading from my kit lens and want to buy something under $500.

I've already got the AF 50mm f/1.8 and kind of like it.

Right now I'm looking at the AF 24mm f/2.8 but after seeing it's $310, I've been wondering if the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 would be a better choice because it's only $420 and also does 24mm and like, 30 other focal lengths.

Both are f/2.8 so I'm wondering if the image quality is really that much better with the Nikon 24mm.

I like that the Nikon will work on FX cameras and give me a nice 35mm on DX.

Another alternative is the AF 28mm f/2.8 which is $235 and gives the "true" normal length of 42mm on DX. The price of this one would make my decision easier but I like the versatility of the zoom.

i have to say, i don't trust anything but nikon glass, I love my 50 prime 1.8 but i am having the same problem you are. I am looking at the 24-85mm nikkor. It also matters what camera you have.

Fuck, I've never even heard of the 24-85 until now.

Why not get the 18-70 or 18-135? They cost less than that one and are pretty damn good.

I have the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and I love it. I don't think I've taken it off since I got it in early july. Close focusing of 10 inches is a nice bonus. Some people claim front focusing, but I've never had a problem with mine, except for low contrast hunting.

I used to used a Nikon 35-105, and I liked it, but I later started using MF (Hasselblad) and there are no (sensible) zooms for that, so I got used to using primes. Now I never use zoom, not even on dig or 35mm. The 24mm is nice and light. Also you can find those used and save some money. Also - whatever you do - buy Nikon. Don't waste your money on Sigma or Tamron
