Dear /p/,

I just recently got a Nikon D70 from a friend. It did not come with any of the software, and I am noticing that 500+ huge images takes a while to sort through. Does anyone have any suggestions on software to use that could help me catalog and transfer files?

I use Aperture, which is a dream. I'm just going to guess you're using Windows, though, since iPhoto is decent and comes on every Mac.

Adobe Bridge is a very capable file manager, but I don't use Windows that often, and certainly not for anything besides games, so I couldn't say for sure.

Adobe Lightroom is a great program. Make sure to set the image format in the camera to raw for the highest quality images. With Lightroom shooting raw is seamless.

How is Lightroom at organization? I've been interested in getting a license for it, but I've held back since it's still a 1.0 app.

Forget any program, Its interface is fucking slow
just transfer every file on it to your computer and then work with them from there. Never work off of the camera

Heh, that's always step no. 1.

I don't think I can convey this feeling with text.
It's just this massive, unrestrained urge to grab your head and pound it on the pavement until you die. It's like just when you're close to coming - that's how bad I want to hurt you. I want to murder your unborn children. I want to rape your daughter. I want to eat your wife and spit on your grave.

The keywording and metadata sorting are great. Also rating photos couple different ways. My system of organizing photos on disk sucked. But the keyword sorting and selecting makes the disk hierarchy mostly meaningless. Collections in Lightroom are like virtual folders that you can put photos into. The Importer is great too. Copies off the memory card, renames based on a template that can include time/date, other metadata. It definitely helped my workflow.

for a "free" software, i use windows to put them into folders.
Then picasa just loads them all...and voila. Fast and effective.
Even with 1GB of free storage space! WOOOOHOOO!!!

Actually, I have an imac (wife's) and a windows computer (mine) so I have access to both.

thanks for the suggestions on lightbox, I'll try it and aperture, and maybe iphoto on the mac

The beta was super slow on my machine, but I found the 1.0 version to be much faster and not use very much memory

Nice, I'll check it out. Hmm, $200 is fairly reasonable if it works well for asset management as well as raw processing.
What are the specs on your box?

IRfanView is free and a very very good image handler, you can browse via thumbnals and it supposrts just about every image format.
