I suppose possibly some lenses but I think that's most of it.

I'd bet on the 450D being the update more than the new 5D successor, but maybe it will be both as some hoped. So far I've heard people claiming all sorts of conflicting things from their amazing "inside information" from someone who works for Canon (probably the cleaner). So many rumours but so little real evidence to back it up.

I think market forces say a 5D Mk. II is more likely. Nobody has made any significant changes to their low end since the D40x, so the XTi's still competing pretty well there. The D3 and D300 have changed the landscape at the high end, though, and Canon needs a new ultra-high-ISO performer to take their lead back up there. I'm thinking something that can shoot ISO1600 that looks like last generation's ISO400.

Also, there've been rumors of a 5D update since before the 400D came out. Just seems like it's due for a replacement more than the 400D.

(The two are certainly not mutually exclusive, though. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a 12MP 450D with live view come out)

Yeah, I'd agree with them not being mutually exclusive. The only reason I expect the new budget camera is because of the release schedules more than lack of features on the 400D. At the low end they need to keep the buzz going for consumers and pile on as many features as they can to attract those who might be wavering between high end P&S or other budget SLRs. Whatever makes it stand out in the shops.

Although many of the fanboys shat bricks when it was suggested, I think they might end up putting something like video and swivel screens and so on in for the next generation of low end cameras. More P&S style features.

I can't really guess at the 5D release schedule though, for obvious reasons. I've heard people claim everything from it being a one-off never to be repeated to it being split into two lines in the future.

I couldn't care less about video, but they should put swivel screens on ALL cameras.

>>112899
Swivel screens would be nice for almost everyone. I know a pro who used to use Bronicas almost exclusively and will wax nostalgic about waist-level finders after awhile if you get him talking about them.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
I dont think the A300 will come out but there is the A200 + swivel screen for sony.

Id ofc like the A300 a lot more but i think they ditched it before the A700

Things I'm expecting in a new 450D:

Moar MP
Liveview
3200 ISO and better data processing
Bigger/brighter/more detailed display

It'll be the same level of upgrading as in previous generations. +2 MP and a bump in everything else. Not so many new features as to make the camera too appealing for those who might buy a 40D (of course still no spot metering) but enough to make people wet themselves over the massive new pixxxels.
>> Anonymous
>>112906
>Moar MP
Not necessarily. I doubt they want to end up again with a low-end model having more MP than a mid-end one.

>Liveview
Less clumsy than 40D plz.

>3200 ISO and better data processing
Again, I'm not sure they'll want their cheapest camera to have better image quality than the 40D.

>Bigger/brighter/more detailed display
You can't fit a 3in. display on a Rebel-sized camera without sacrificing the button layout. But 640x480 would be nice.
>> Anonymous
the problem with swivel displays is that they are more fragile. not so good for pro models that need to be rugged and weatherproof.

waist level viewfinders used to be the bane of photography.

who is putting swivels on mid-high end models?

Sony is putting it on (something thats worse than the A100 afai can tell) a low end model, who else is using them?

You can make a rugged camera with a swivel screen, it just takes a bit more effort.

no matter how hard you try it won't last as well. that's why they started removing the useless pop up flash on pro models to get better sealing and a tougher body.

it's just more to go wrong.
>> Anonymous
>>112915
So is:

A light meter
Autofocus
Interchangeable lenses
IS/VR
A mirror assembly
A rear screen at all
A removable memory card
A motordrive
Hell, even a shutter at all. Pinhole cameras work fine.

>> Anonymous
>>112924
I was being hyperbolic, but the point is that *any* feature is "just more to go wrong," but they put all sorts of features on pro bodies because they have been developed enough to generally be reliable.

And a pop-up flash is replaceable by a shoe flash, but unless someone produces an honest-to-goodness waist-level finder, a swivel screen isn't.

And personally, I'd rather have a swivel screen over (from that list) autofocus and motordrive. Manually focusing and cocking a shutter isn't that hard.
>> Anonymous
>>112931

that has nothing to do with the context i was speaking in: for rugged pro bodies with weather sealing. you have jumped on to that last line and waffled on about irrelevant things and missed the point entirely.
>> Anonymous
>>112931
>And a pop-up flash is replaceable by a shoe flash.
Not so much if you're shooting under conditions that require weatherproofing. That's probably why Olympus put an internal flash in the E-3.
>> des
Why hasn't anyone just made removable finders for the flagship dslrs? Almost every flagship film slr has them.
Then you could get waist-level, action, macro/magnifying, right-angle, whateverthefuck. I'd imagine it's a lot easier to ruggedize a latching weather-strip'd finder than it is a hinged lcd.
>> Anonymous
>>112938

You can already get them.
>> Sicko !L3HRY/miC.
"The K20D is said to have a 14-megapixel CMOS sensor instead of the K10D's 10.2-megapixel sensor, along with a 14-bit RAW A/D Processor and our favorite, a 3-inch live view LCD. There will be improved image stabilization inside the virtually unchanged camera body, a shake reduction system Pentax has traditionally approached by moving the CCD rather than shifting lens elements.

The K200D will have a 10-megapixel sensor manufactured by Sony, and a PRIME 12-bit image processor. It will be able to crank out three frames per second, and also may have that larger 3-inch LCD."

I don't get the "crank out three frames per second" thing, the K100D already does that.

There are plenty of moving parts and openings in "rugged pro bodies with weathersealing." They manage to, nonetheless, have everything from a lens that comes off to a little cabinet that opens up and holds the memory card, instead of just having a permanent drive in the camera. Having a screen that moves should not be that hard. That's my point.

And hey, look, somebody did it.

Everyone loves Sony's 10MP CCDs! Looks like K200D will be basically Pentax's equivalent of D40x, lol.
>> Anonymous
>>112946

I guess that's why you are designing cameras for a living and they've never removed the pop-up flash from pro bodies for improved ruggedness and reliability over the years.
>> Anonymous
>>112942
So how do I put a waist-level finder on my 1Ds?
>> Anonymous
>>112952

I find that working a flat headed screw driver or a pen knife into the edges of the screen and wrenching it up works great!
>> Anonymous
>>112951

Yeah, except see

>>112914.

It's been done. Any argument about the possibility of a weather-sealed swivel screen ended when somebody built it.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>112952

You can buy one that attaches to the viewfinder and has a big screen on it.
>> Anonymous
>>112954

no it didn't, retard. you've got to prove that it is just as rugged as one without, which you can't as that screen and pop-up will snap off when dropped.
>> Anonymous
>>112957
A) A screen could be attached onto a camera in a much less fragile way than a flash at the end of two little arms.
B) Neither of them are essential features. Someone could still shoot without a flash or without live view and chimping. The show goes on.
>> Anonymous
>>112951
It's not just because of riggedness; most pros simply have no use for an underpowered, fixed-position flash. For example, Canon 5D is neither rugged nor weatherproof, but it still doesn't have a built-in flash.

And personally, I have yet to see a camera that's broken due to a built-in flash, but I've seen quite a few with cracked screens and bent lens mounts (the latter are theoretically the sturdiest part of a camera)
>> Anonymous
>>112959
Oh, and to add: the folding screen will only snap when extended, and has the potential to be more rugged than a fixed screen when not in use. Articulating screens have been made that fold up into the body, preventing the screen from breaking if the camera is dropped.
>> Anonymous
>>112957
If a swivel screen is folded facing *inside*, it actually has less chances of breaking than an always exposed non-swivel screen.

...PMA rumours?
>> Anonymous
>>112876

It seems very unlikely that we'll see a 450D. That particular part of the market is probably still of the "more pixels = better" mindset, so it would have to be 12MP to fit in. And considering the 40D is only 10MP, it seems improbable that Canon will have a higher megapixel Rebel at this point.
