From this list of Nikon's, which one offers the best bang for the buck? And why?

If you don't know what you need, then you don't need much. Get a D40 or something.

personally, i think the nikon d70 with less than 5000 actuations is the best dslr for a beginner. D70/D70s is technically the predecessor to the current d80 line, and imho superior to anything in the budget (d40/d40x/d60) range in terms of durability and easy of use.

I was concerned by the lack of megapxls when i first bought it but after a few shots realized that what other people had said was true, more megapxls is nothing more than a selling point. 10 megapxls is nice to have but saving money and spending it on a good set of lens is a better investment.

you pretty much can overwhelm yourself with indecision when it comes to buying your first dslr. the truth is, there are really only three things to consider.

1) you come for the body, you stay for the lens. you will eventually throw away that body. don't rely too much on it. but a good lens can be a life investment.
2) don't get bogged down by indecision, the time you spend without a camera is time you can't get back.

That's exactly how I feel right now...I've read so much on SLR and D-SLR camera foundations, read tons of reviews, previews, user comments, forum posts, whitepapers...my mind is spinning!

Vistek? If you live in Calgary, fuck Vistek and buy from The Camera Store.

If you're in Toronto, disregard that.

i know. it sucks doesn't it? i'm one of those people who research everything out of 'major investments' before i buy.

on paper, i was pretty open to the d40 but when i actually went to the store it felt very toyish. but going the d80 route would have been too much money for a hobby i wasn't sure i was going to like in 6 months.

what are the biggest factors holding you back right now?

No, if you live in Toronto, fuck vistek as well, well maybe not fuck them, but go to Henry's or Downtown Camera instead
