New Camera, lens question. Anonymous
Well, I currently use a Canon XTi with a variety of lenses, my most common being a 17-85 and a 70-200 (L series). The only problem is, it's not my camera, since I have been to poor to afford one (borrowing it from a friend who has the cash to throw around). I now have about $1500 to spend on a camera and I have decided on the Canon XSi (no Nikon vs Canon stuff... I don't want to learn another camera ATM and I have access to the Canon stuff I am using now.)

I can't make up my mind on the lens('s) I want/can afford. I have been looking at the "Canon Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens for Select Digital SLR Cameras" (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=workaround.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=35154
8&is=USA) for my mid-range lens (currently what I use the most) and the "Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens" (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=workaround.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=39766
3&is=USA) for a higher zoom version for the 70-200 I currently use...

I have been readin reviews and such all night for many differant Canon lenses, and can't make up my mind. The ones I posted above are a little high in the price range (ATM, I hope to buy better later) and I am wondering what /p/ has used and likes.

Some of my stuff is posted on my DA account (Yeah, I know DA is crap, but I am too busy to throw a gallery up on my own site right now.) http://lycwolf.deviantart.com/

tl:dr ITT Suggestions for Canon lenses on the semi cheap...

Thnx

why are you looking to buy a lens that you say that you already own?

In before 17-85 is soft w/test charts to prove it.

amateurs keep blaming their gear for not getting good shots

Sell it second-hand, use this money to start saving for a new lens. For the record I use the 17-85 and don't mind it. What I want is to swap that for a 10-30 odd lens to complement my 28-200 sigma. All cheap and not very good but I'm a student and I'm not that bothered really, I still get some nice photos out of it.

Since you are already talking about the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. I currently have Canon XSi + basic IS kit lens. Any sense in replacing the kit lens with the Tamron?

OP here....

None of the gear is mine, I have been borrowing it form a friend for the last several months.

What about a macrolens? 10-20mm, works wonders for great closeups!
