hey guys i've been thinking about getting a canon powershot g9 and i was wondering if any had an experience with it.

i heard its kind of like a dslr but small so i was wondering what the photoquality is like compared to a real dslr

well.. see for yourself
but anyway I'd go with dslr's
you'll regret a lot spending this amount in a non dslr

the image quality of the g9 is nice, but comparing it with a dslr is a stretch. if you're gonna get an expensive point-and-shoot like the g9, might as well just save a bit and get an entry-level dslr (but if you want portability with image quality almost comparable to the g9, just get the a640 or better yet the a650)

know what really irritates the fuck out of me?

In order to get good image quality you have to get a dslr.

Ok, fine, I can understand that. And obviously you lose the small size and portability of point and shoots. Ok, sure.

BUT! what the fuck is up with the point and shoots like the g9 having MORE MANUAL SETTINGS, FUNCTIONALITY, LIVE HISTOGRAMS, AND A BILLION OTHER FUNCTIONS that I can't even FIND on a dslr?

I don't really need the ability to shoot video (though it would be cool), and I don't need it to be every so tiny and never have to spend any more money on lenses.

But PUT ALL THE FUNCTIONALITY YOU CRAM INTO THE GOOD POINT AND SHOOTS INTO THE DSLRS.

Why is this so hard for them to do?

>>yeah, but live view ON THE BACK OF THE CAMERA allows you to hold the camera down at your waist, or up above your head.
Then you don't want an SLR
>>You then have to go and buy all the lenses too...

you shouldnt need to see your iso in the viewfinder. you should already know what it is. dont need to see size/quality all the time either. flash on/off, camera mode, battery, white balance, total photos left are all useless in the viewfinder. the whole point of the viewfinder is to compose the shot. if you cant see shit because of all this crap in there all the time, the viewfinder is useless.

again. I'm VERY HAPPY with my dslr.

I have a few lenses and am quite content to switch them out all day.

BUT THE POINT STILL HOLDS THAT YOU PAY A SHITLOAD FOR THESE THINGS.

why should other people get more functionality for less? I don't see why I can't have great image quality AND great ease of use.

And don't act all high and mighty. There are times you'd use a live view on the back of the camera too if you needed to.

yeah, and that's why you have the option to turn off all the extra info.

And most of the time you *do* know what the iso is, but every once in awhile you were shooting the night before, the iso is at 1600, and the first five shots the next day in bright sunlight are ruined because of excessive graininess.

or you could look at the display on top of the camera/on the back to see what the iso is.

more functionality doesnt mean ease of use.

The G9 is Canon's top-of-the-line non-SLR. It is the best non-SLR they make.

It costs less than an SLR because it doesn't have the big-ass SLR sensor, the complicated mechanical and electrical system to support interchangeable lenses, and the whole mirror/viewfinder assembly.

If you want the large sensor and the SLR mechanism, you have to accept a tradeoff--the G9 is already nearly the same price as the Digital Rebel XT, after all. I'd bet a nickel that Canon makes more money on each G9 sold than it does for each Digital Rebel kit sold.

>> You spend a shitload on the body alone!

No, you spend a shitload on the lenses. The bodies are basically interchangeable. You go through tons of different bodies, because they basically do the same thing (capture light). Lenses are where you pay, because they are the heart of the camera.
The sensor quality difference between a low-end DSLR and a high-end PnS is negligible (better low-light performance and less noise in the DSLR). You get the SLR because you want the lenses.

Which is why it's kind of *heh* to see people walking around with their expensive DSLRs and one cheap super wide-to-tele zoom lens.

can the g9 take different lens?

no, there might be some attachments but its nothing like the changing of lenses that goes on with SLRS.

hmmm i've been thinking about getting a g9 too but i want it too be able to use wide-angle lens....

Wow, that's quite a huge difference to call "negligible" there. That's kinda like saying "The differences between different lenses are negligible. The more expensive ones are just sharper and faster with better bokeh."
