>>42110 lets say you want to take a shot of something with a motion blur effect on a sunny day. maybe a waterfall or something. even at the smallest aperture, it might not be a long enough exposure to get the shot you want. throw on a ND filter and you can now increase your exposure to get the effect you want.
or, lets say you are taking a portrait outside. you want a rather shallow DoF to make it look more pleasing but its too bright so you have to use a small aperture. throw on an ND, use a larger aperture, and theres your shallower DoF.
