Mine is 4 MP but I agree. Point and shoots are awesome.

CHDK for the win

better than dslr, fraction of the price, same functions

Yep seriously. Every serious photographer should own at least an A590, A650 or A720. The only reason why I'm getting a DSLR is the low noise and slightly better clarity in daylight. And the speed of operation.

Yeah, I wish I had a camera with Digic II or III instead of Digic I so I could play around with the settings more. You'll find a lot of cameras can do much more than they are initially programmed for. I don't get why low end DSLRs can't do the same things as point and shoots (like time lapse built in).

obvious troll is obvious

ITT people relate OP's picture to his post.
for people who didnt notice, the picture was taken with a canon 5d.

inb4 trolled.

Because time-lapse will eat the mechanical shutter of a DSLR, but won't eat the electronic shutter of a P&S. Also, you don't need DSLR quality for time-lapse (usually).

sage this shit into oblivion

Most point and shoots have electronically controlled in-lens leaf shutters.

Most (all?) DSLRs have electronically controlled in-body focal plane shutters.

No, I thought that he had actually taken that with a 3MP point and shoot. For fucks sake. I was just agreeing with his statement.

>>201017
Do you know this or are you making shit up? Almost all DSLRs are able to take time-lapse with an accessory. Professional models (D3, D300) have time-lapse built in. I don't see how taking a picture once every minute or hour would eat the shutter any more than 3 shots per second.

OP here. I took this picture from a gigantic game of minesweeper. The resulting mine configuration happened to produce this picture.

Total shutter actuations:
1 hour of time-lapse @ 30 fps = 3600X30 = 108'000 actuations.

You do one hour of video with time-lapse, and you've killed a camera. Sure, smaller amounts would be fine, but you may as well use a P&S since they're so much cheaper.

>>2010631 hour of time-lapse

pro tip: no one makes 1 hour time lapses

What the fuck? What DSLR camera does 30 fps?
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>201072
I didn't say a 1-hour video.
I said 1 hour of time-lapse.

Difference.

>>201079
Try reading it again. Time-lapse involves significantly less than 1fps.
>> Anonymous
>>201083

no one is going to make 1 hour time lapse for shits and giggles with a dslr

you'd use a video camera for it
>> Imposter !ZAs2L6QHh6

Learn to write.

What he meant to say is after taking a total of 1 hour's worth of time lapses over the camera's life, you'd were it out. I believe that time lapse videos are generally less than 30 fps though.

I mean wear it out.

30fps is real time. time lapse would be more like, 1 hour viewed in 10 seconds, or (10*30fps) spread over (60*60) seconds.
so, that's a new photo every 12 seconds, or 300 frames-per-hour.
to do a 24 hour (day-night-day) cycle would be 7200 actuations. double it to 20 seconds per hour and you still only have 14,400 frames.

There's a huge parking structure directly across the street. Cost is a bit high though ($10 for about 3 hours).
