Levels is your friend...
...aside from that, buy a polarizing filter or UV/haze. Be forewarned that polarizers often have weird color shifts (green+bronze are common) so pick carefully. I spent more than most people spend on a lens, for a B&W...but it was worth every penny; no color shift, and a very high exclusion ratio (or whatever they call it, I forget.) Probably would have been cheaper if it wasn't a near-80mm-wide filter :(
