Question for your portrait photographers out there (or whomever feels like answering)- I am one of many photographers going to a charity event this weekend, with roughly 45 models (male and female) attending. It's basically a grab and go- everyone gets together and mingles, then beginning at 12 and going until 4, photographers grab models and models grab photographers and we all just shoot around this huge horse ranch.

So far I am bringing with me
40 Rolls of Astia
20 rolls of b/w
15 rolls of Kodak 160 NC

and my camera gear; Nikon n80 with my 35-135 lens & my wide angle and my tripod.

is there anything else I should bring with me?

inb4 nudes, post here, etcetc.

More film. Can't hurt.

A flash and a medium telephoto prime, if you have them.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
man i wouldnt even know where to begin with film...

Is it outdoors? are you gonna need a speedlight? if so i guess grabbing that and a diffuser would be great. Christ, even an umbrella or softbox if you have time to set up with models.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
strictly outdoors, in the worst possible time to shoot, starting at 12pm

glad to see you're finally using astia like i suggested; you won't regret it.

you should grab a 5-in-1 reflector. Comes with a black side, silver side, gold side, and a white side that can act as a diffuser. clamp it to your tripod or get someone to hold it for you. they are unbelievably handy for controlling contrast ratios, directing sunlight into shade, softening sunlight, etc.

they also weigh like, 12 ounces.

Well even for your on-camera flash, something to jury-rig as a diffuser would be good.

Fast lens and a ND filter

why nd?

>>94884
>Fast lens
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>94884
Because it's mid-day and if you're shooting portraits with a fast lens, you're gonna want to open it up wide. At f/1.4 or f/1.8, that'll require a higher shutter speed than the n80 can likely handle. Hell, with a 8x ND and slow film you can shoot a Noctilux wide open.

makes sense to me. good to know.

>> Teus !QbSstcPD6U
nice to see the Astia.

you forgot a remote triggered flash with an umbrella.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
I don't think i really need a flash- as we'll be strictly outside- but i will keep that in mind for the future. Anything additional i need to bring with me (though i probably will buy a reflector for good measure now and in the future) will have to be homemade. I don't have a lot of $$ to spare and it's pretty tight, with all the film i've got. I have *never* seen so much frickin film in one place in my life, it's insane.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ

A folding reflector or a flash is handy for a little fill light. It can look flattering if you have a large reflector down low to reduce the shadows a little. Plus, they fold up really small and are light. You can get them quite cheaply if you shop around.

Make sure you learn how to fold those things back up BEFORE you go there though! the bigger they get the more awkward it is.

Insane amounts of film? That's how you know it'll be awesome.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>95132
So, wishing you'd gone digital yet? ;)

Incidentally, outside in hard noontime light is one of the best times to use flash. Unless you really dig on the "dark, unexposed, cavernous black eye sockets" look.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
i hope the 160NC turns out well, i hate recommending things that turn out shit lol.
have fun~

well, grab a reflector at least, a little touch of extra light greatly improves the photo.

before you get your massive load of film scanned, you better work out these 2 problems. they line is probably the scanner (dust removal can fix this), the big fat spot from handling. E6 processed film is usually done by pro/expert labs that deliver virtually dustless film.

handling for the scanning can introduce some dust, but this is a bit too much.

Not in the least! I wouldn't have it any other way ;)

>>95139
I'll take a quick shot of my film stock before I go out there, hehehehe. It'll be entertaining.

>>95155
that particular film wasn't slide, it was c41. Both of them are my mistakes, yes. I scan in everything myself.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>95148

i'll let you know :D heheh, i'm sure it'll be fine.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>95155
the line isn't from the scanner, i get that also, its normally from either from the camera body (check if the back plate is clean) or the developing machine. I have the same scanner as her, its super great (hence the name, super coolscan). But your right, ICE will remove the marks ^_^

Liska, i almost forgot, with your million bajillion rolls of film you have to scan, i strongly recommend the SA-30 roll film adapter, it makes life so much more easy, about 30mins per roll with batch scan when you dont cut the film.
>> Teus !QbSstcPD6U
>>the line isn't from the scanner,
are you sure?
scratches from processing/camera are even worse, mostly irregular and grouped. the line really looks even, like a bad sensor on the scanner CCD
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>95176
i'm 100% sure, you can even see them on the film itself. some labs make it worse than others. But pro labs normally make no scratches, its normally on C41 films
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>95176

absolutely. It's from my camera. I try to clean my camera consistently and a lot, especially around the film area, but soemtimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Good news is it isnt' TOO obvious, aside from that damn spot above her head I couldn't get to go away. I've learned to work around it until i pay off the f100 i bought over the Holidays

>>95175
I was using ICE, but for some reason I couldnt' get it to work on this one. I love that feature, it's a godsend.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
You bought an f100? That's great! Are you not using it yet?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>95182

payment plan/layaway; bought it through my store in MI so i got $100 off.
>> Anonymous
F100? Fuck yeah! I'm so proud of you for trading up, liska. The F100 is my favorite camera.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>95184

It was about time to upgrade; i'll use both camera bodies but with me doing more model shoots, I need something reliable and without a line on the camera and a dirty viewfinder. if you don't mind me asking, how much did you get your f100 for? I LOVE the vertical hand grip. Thats frickin awesome.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

>>95186

$250? You got an amazing deal. I paid $525 two years ago at a local shop for barely used (8 or 9 rolls of film through it), and it was a good deal back then. The other shops wanted 750, which is how much my girlfriend's brother paid when he was a student at Brooks.

I would pay 750 again without a second of hesitation. It's that good.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>95193
I'm seeing a lot of used ones for around 300 online.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>95200
Where? I want to sell it to that guy for $750.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>95201

From a browse on eBay you'll certainly see them going for about $400-450. Maybe cheaper if you are patient enough.
>> Anonymous
>>95200

yeah, the prices on film bodies are insanely volatile right now, especially since they're becoming collector's items. My FE2 was fetching 350 bucks on Adorama three months ago, now it's back down to a more reasonable $200. Who knows six months from now? The price of the F100 might skyrocket once ken rockwell starts blathering on about how awesome film is compared to his D300.

and it was a figure of speech, ac. If i had to choose between paying 750 for say, a D80 or an F100, it would be the F100 every time.

the camera is slightly used- but not by much. I dealt directly with the store owner, so i know he'll take good care of me.

I'm def excited to get it in my hands and take it out and about.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
Amazon's "new and used" is 300. Keh has ex+ for 310 and ex for 265.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
Lol, i'm saving my pennies for a F6 to replace my 3 metric tonne F5
>> Anonymous
it's a steal at that price. seriously, it's an amazing camera; it makes pretty much every sub-$3000 camera feel like a toy (the D100 and
D200, iirc, are based off the F90x chassis and not the F100.)

it's also the Nikon F6 designer's favorite camera, along with the F3.

http://nikonimaging.com/global/technology/scene/09/
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
the f4, f5 and f6 are just plain too big for me to carry around, i cant' do it. I'm tiny enough to the point where having the hand grip on the bottom of the f100 makes it a bit heavier than i'd like. :x
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
They aren't based off the F90, the F90 is a much older camera than the F100 and F80, also a much more boxy design compared to the F80/F100/D100/D200. What you will find that the D100 is based off the F80 or F100. I use to have a F90x and i'm pretty sure the D100 isn't based off it.
>> Anonymous
>>95236
F6 is basically the same size as a F100, but the F5 is huuuge
>> Anonymous
>>95236

the f100 is pretty damn heavy too, unfortunately. i usually carry it by hand instead of slinging it around my neck, because i've ended up with sore muscles after a long day of shooting.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>95240

I remember trying to carry around my dads f4 and f5 when I was little, hehehhe. I could barely carry it.

>>95242
I know it is, but i figured the extra weight came from the vertical hand grip attached to the bottom, which can be taken off and set aside. If i take it off, it looks to be about the same.
>> Anonymous
>>95237

you're right, i'm thinking of the F80 (or N80).
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
Just figured i'd use the same thread, because i've another question. Model releases- do I always need them or do I not need them with neither me nor model are getting paid? Most i would be doing is portfolio work- for my portfolio and theirs. Advice?
>> angrylittleboy !wrJcGUHncE
>>95593

I haven't had any experience using them, but from what people tell me, it would be a good idea to ask for releases even if you think you won't use them.
