hey /p/,
im looking at buying a new high end mp camera ie 8 or more, and was looking at the Nikon Coolpix S51. Has anyone used this camera? Own one? I need some feedback. If not anyone got suggestions on different slim cams? 8.1<

Nikon film SLRs are awesome.
Nikon digital SLRs are good.
Nikon compact digicams suck ass. Mediocre image quality plus one of the most unresponsive UIs. Get some canon or sony or maybe even olympus.

I really like my Fujifilm S700 for a non-SLR. Of course now that I've got the photography bug I want a real digital SLR but this one is still fun to play with till I can get it.

If you want the best IQ for your money then buying a camera like that isn't the best idea. If all you want is something slim and pretty to take pictures with then choose whatever is cool to you and it will do the job. Don't expect it to be any good for you getting into proper photography though.

Point and shoot cameras aren't high end, per se. But if you're looking for a great point and shoot that handily bests the S51, get a Sony DSC-W90. I have one and like it a lot. 8.1MP, compact, tons of features, and a great UI.

You can have all the MP in the world and it wont fix the shit lense on the point and shoot cams.

high megapixel ones can be worse due to their tiny sensor.

This is something I've been wondering about. My Fuji Finepix is 7.1 MP. It takes images of 3072 x2304. I've read it has a 4x crop sensors :/. that is pretty darn bad. Now if I drop down to a lower resolution shot does it not get cropped as badly? Or does it always take them at the same resolution and resize them down when it saves them? I'm just trying to get the best image quality I can out of this thing till I can afford a DSLR down the road.

The only differences it will make is that it will be the camera processes the pictures faster, it will be a smaller image and take up less room on the card.

The "crop" is to do with the size of the sensor and only makes sense with DSLRs and the FOV you get through the viewfinder. As you can't change lenses it doesn't matter what FOV crop you have.

It has to do with image quality because a smaller sensor like mine has, making the same size image as a larger sensor'd camera results in a loss in image quality. I was hoping there was some way I could trick a little bit extra quality out of this thing as I can't upgrade for a while. I'm a college kid who is late on rent as it is... :/

No, but the term "crop" is really only meaningful when talking about DSLRs. That's what I meant. For compacts it's a moot point.

The sensor will be smaller, but it'll be manageable. I'd bet you can get awesome 6x4s and good 10x8s from it. What print size do you normally use?

Work with it and learn the manual modes.

I don't do much printing I mostly just deal with digital. I haven't produced anything worthy of print yet. :) I suppose it does really just have to do with the end size.

I wish my camera had a better manual zoom as the auto focus is very finicky. Almost all of the pictures I took of the lake I went and shot at were not very crisp. However the few I did autofocus were very crisp. What I mean by a "better manual zoom" is that in order to use the manual zoom on the Fujifilm S700, you have to do this every time you change any modes or really do anything. You go menu > Focus > Manual Focus. Then you have to hold down the exposure button while turning the zoom lever. That focuses in or out. Once you are in manual focus mode though you can no longer adjust the aperture or shutter speed so if you need to change one you need to go out turn auto focus back on, at which point it will retry to focus and ruin your manual focus, then you change the shutter or aperture, then switch back to manual... refocus... shoot. It's very cumbersome. : (99999
