So I scored an awesome (and expensive as hell) pair of tickets to see my local NBA team play and brought my camera along to take some pics. I only have a D40 kit, so what sucked was that I couldn't zoom in on shit. Also, they told me to turn the flash off, so pretty much all my action shots came out blurry as fuck. Here are a couple shots that turned out OK, I think.

And finally, this one, just for ac.

Goddamn, I need me that 18-200mm VR.

yeah, i woulda told you to turn off the flash too.
1) the stadium lights are on
2) your subject is more than 12 ft away

in these situations, your on-board flash isn't powerful enough to do anything more than be annoying.

if you want to get the 18-200 VR just don't go to two games ... it's the same price isn't it :P

No one needs the 18-200 VR. If you're in an environment where changing lenses would be a bad idea, my understanding is that the build quality is bad enough to make using the 18-200 a bad idea.

Get a set of good primes. For sports, especially indoor sports, one needs speed, which zooms aren't going to give you, generally. Especially not an 18-200 one.

Start out with one in the range of 28mm to 35mm... the Sigma 30/1.4 is probably a good idea, since I know it'll autofocus for you. There's really few types of photography one can't do with that focal length on a crop sensor. It might be a little short for sports, but it'll do you for most other things.

More like "Carrying lenses" Aka Skiing, or anywhere where weight and size is a factor (aka hiking, Kyaking, etc)

It has its uses, just not indoor basketball arena's. You need an 85mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 or something along those lines

At the risk of being called really gay, I think Matt Barnes is really attractive for some reason. If that makes me a FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG so be it

I like the 70-200 2.8 for college basketball in a real stadium and the 85mm 1.8 and a fifth of tequila for community college.

Yeah, well, the photographers that were there didn't use flash (as far as I could tell) either...

And I got the tickets for free. They're $400 a pop. I don't have season tickets. I'm not a fucking millionaire.

But yeah, I know the 18-200mm catches a lot of heat on here, but frankly I don't mind if my pictures aren't as sharp as a prime or a fucking huge ass 70-200mm 2.8 zoom lens or something. I can just imagine having all that range. I'd jump all over the 18-200 if it weren't so damn expensive. Perhaps if and when I get my tax return...

The VR will NOT get you better action shots. You absolutely need a faster lens for that. It's fine for leisurely family and friends shit, but not for serious shooting.

The 55-200VR and a fast prime or zoom is a much better investment.

Can't the D40 do better than 400 iso?

>>126000
It can do 1600.

3200. Its labeled as Hi 1 so soccermoms aren't all like "OMG why do my pics look liek shitttttt?!?!?! IT WAS MY SONS 11TH BIRTHDAY FUCKKKKKKK!!"

>Yeah, well, the photographers that were there didn't use flash (as far as I could tell) either...

Yes, they were. But they had strobes mounted in the arena somewhere, not on top of their camera.

No, it's labeled as Hi 1 because it's not actually ISO3200, it's a pushed ISO1600. So ISO1600 levels of noise, enhanced, and with the shadows lost.
