I'm thinking of getting my dad a digital SLR for christmas, yeah I know, 1 day left, amiright? Anyway, I have a first gen SLR from I guess it's been 5 years now and I haven't kept up on the new technology. I didn't like the rebels when they first came out, but now I've heard they're the best amateur SLR out there. Should I get him a rebel XTi or is there something else better for the price?tl;dr: Rebel XTi for an amateur or something else?
Is your dad into photography? Does he have an SLR already with some lenses?(XTi's a good amateur camera. But if he has, say, a bunch of Nikon equipment, something like the Nikon D80 would be better)
Nah he doesn't really have equipment. He used to shoot on a film SLR back when he was in college and shit but if he even had lenses I doubt they're still around and no idea what brand.
Might be worth digging around to see if you can find that old gear. Might just be that it is compatible with one of the fittings of today and it might be best to not only have a mount that means he's got lenses to use, but that the system is more familiar to him too.If you are sure he's not got anything like that then you would be fine going with your choice there. It's good for the price.
