I entered this into a challenge as a good example of Bokeh. However it isn't getting a very good score... I want to know why /p/. Is it because of poor focus around her eyes, or is it due to the rather generic subject? I realuze it isn't a fantastic picture, but I was proud of it myself...

the bokeh is just pretty mediocre (ugly). focus seems to be more on the eye then on the nose

I think the focus is more on the nose than the eyes. I would have chosen a different more colorful background that wasn't as blown out.

a while ago someone posted a flickr account to demonstrate the vivid colors of Velvia 50, BUT the guy who had the page had most of his pics taken wide open an a 50mm f1.0 lens. If anyone still has that link, I would suggest taking a look at it, Theres some amazing short DOF stuff taken with that!

Was it the Noctilux or the Canon 50/1? Because from what I've seen, the Canon was optically shit all around and the Noctilux's bokeh is either really hit or really miss depending on the shot.

I forget, the guys shots looked good though, might have been another makes lens though, the guy did have a hassleblad f1.4 lens and a mamiya camera aswell

AFAIK, the only f/1 lenses are the Noctilux and the Canon.

found it! it was the noctilux.

If the DOF was on the eyes and the sky not overexposed. You see, all the color and light is outside your subject, not on it. So it's like, we notice because it fills up most of the screen but what's really screaming for attention is everything else in the pic

Noctilux and Canon are not the only ones, but the only mass-produced of them (if you can apply "mass-produced" to this kind of stuff anyway).

interesting lens, but bokeh is a little poo for what the lens is.

Great bokeh isn't always about massive wide open apertures, but of good lens design.
A good lens will create lovely bokeh at any fstop.

Pic: My 85mm f/1.8 @ f/3.5, see how smooooth the bokeh is, thats how it should be. (repost, i know)

If we ignore lenses with obvious design limitations (fixed aperture, 3-blade diaphragms, catadioptric, etc.), great bokeh is mostly about USING THE LENS RIGHT.
