how does the 40d compare to the rebel XSi?
I've been reading up a bit, but I can't find anything really definitive.

I just bought an EF 50/f-1.4 for my old rebel G 35mm camera and I want to get a DSLR now

Any Canon DSLR that's not a rebel > A rebel.
No exceptions have been seen.

You won't be disappointed. Enjoy your 40D.

The XSi does everything the 40D does.

The 40D just does everything faster, easier, and more comfortably than the XSi.

There's really no reason to get the 40D over the XSi unless you're shooting sports. If you're shooting portraits or landscapes seriously or professionally, save up for the 5D.

Admittedly though the 40D is worth the price difference in comfort and ergonomics. Holding the dinky rebels for any period of time is a chore.

dpreview.com has a side-by-side comparison tool, located under the link Buying Guide. You can compare just about any sort of modern digital camera.

Just for shits and giggles I picked out this comparison between the S5, the G9, the 40D, and the 450D - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_s5is%2Ccanon_g9
