So I just bought one of these small tripods.
I don't like carrying around my large normal one, and I had a tiny tiny one which lost 2 of its 3 feet.

Has anyone used one of these before? Recommend it? Have somethign better (in the small variety)?

Why do you seek a recommendation after buying the item in question? I saw these for sale on holiday, thought they looked awesome. A tripod is a tripod.

Yeah, i have one... be very careful - I ruined a lens after it decided not to grip as i intended it to. £110 to repair..

i use mine all the time, as a matter of fact, its my only tripod

I sell them at my store. They're not meant for holding DSLRs, so if you can find a light enough one to be hold without sagging then you're lucky. Otherwise, they're awesome for holding your compact on curved surfaces, it's great when out with friends without having to carry your huge DSLR.
Other than that, they're shit.

a better choice for a DSLR would be

a small beanbag for cameras

you could also buy a bag of beans or rice from the grocery store; and use something like a dollar store pillowcase or sheet and cut to size, fill with beans/rice and then sew it closed

>Other than that, they're shit.

I love the neccessary /p/ addition to the end, "it's great (but it's still shit)"

Most of those small tripods seem shit, can't hold over a handful of pounds, or expensive (some sell for 80+ bucks).

You can polish a turd, but its still a turd.
You can't sugar coat it.
"Well, its shit, but its that non-smelly kind. I mean, it still stinks, but its not as bad. It'll attract flies, but not those big horse ones, only the small ones, and not as many. So, it could be worse, but its still shit."

it's mainly for compacts, light DSLR's work too I guess.

it's neat for sticking it to say a railing or something for self-portraits with friends.

I use them for my flashes. The big ones are sturdy enough to hold a flash and an umbrella. Or you can place them around the room and bounce them from ceilings and walls. Endless fun.

Good idea, I actually never thought of this. Cheap, too, I sell them for around ten bucks CAD.

Do not get the "Sunpak" gorillapod knockoff, it's a piece of shit. Broke before I even attached it to a camera.

Also, DIY version:

this tripod's pretty good if you have something to set it on that's about the right hieght, but if there isn't, you're fucked
