How often do you buy a new set of equipment? What do you do with the old?

I've been looking at the new cameras out there, and some are really nice. But the thing is, my old camera is still functioning all fine. It's no longer in the higher end, but it takes decently sharp pics. Unfortunately it's well used and got many scratches and dents, so there is no second hand value to speak of, especially when even newer out of the box condition ones most often quickly loose most value.

So when is it time to get a new one? How do you decide when you old camera should be replaced?

I keep my equipment going until it dies, hands down, no questions asked. Once it starts to affect the shots i'm taking, then I go get a new camera body. I barely ever change lenses, as long as they're working

This is true for me in general, I make sure I do the research and buy the equipment I want in the beginning, then don't replace it until it breaks down. If the camera isn't affecting my shots, I wouldn't upgrade unless it gives me better functionality. Of course, right now I'm using a powershot a530 that I got for christmas, and there are little quirks that already make me want something a little higher end. Lke the ability to use filters, or a little more variety in manual. So the real question is, are you satisfied with your camera's performance?

You buy gear according to your needs.
First cam was a panasonic FX-7. Then realized I need something of a longer zoom. Gave the cam to my aunt.
Second cam was a Canon S2IS. Great toy, and skillz got upgraded and the noise, image quality no longer prove worthy. Sold it.
Third cam is current cam dSLR Nikon D70s. Got a 50mm F1.8 for free (used), bought the famous 18-70mm (gold and silver), and something on the longer focal length sigma 70-300mm macro full frame (slow lens, but the macro makes up for it).
Used the on camera flash, but everything was washed out...spend money on the SB-600 flash, photo jumped +200% compared with on camera flash.

Planning to get a D200....but I need to buy a house and a new car too...

I use my stuff until it can't possibly be hacked together again. It's kind of depressing.
If I was to actually get my rig in even moderately good repair, I'd have to chuck probably a couple grand at it.
