This is from a Kodak Instant print camera. Mine had a crank that ejected the picture. To get this effect I stopped and started the crank while it developed. This film was cool because you could peel off the "pod" of chemicals from the back. They called it "Trimprint." Then Polaroid sued them (and won) and I couldn't get film packs anymore. Sorry, no nudes.

Very, very few people still use polaroids. You can get a crappy digital camera that'll still give you better image quality than a Polaroid for the cost of about four packs of Polaroid film.

Ohhh man, that is not true, I've used some pretty crappy digitals.

If you KNOW how to use a polaroid camera, the images come out just fine

And its not about the quality of the image, its the point that when it comes out of that camera, you can see a memory getting developed right before your eyes and as said before, its like having a hard copy of your work. Digital is good and all but the memory cards can get corrupted and crap. polaroids can't get damaged unless you misstreat them. SD cards can get damaged if you look at them funny.

The thing that kicks my ass is that Type 55 is gone. 4x5 B&W Polaroid film that gave you both a print AND a negative. Amazing stuff. (Pic cropped because I don't have a model release...) My Polaroid 4x5 back is now useless.

>Ohhh man, that is not true, I've used some pretty crappy digitals.
I'm not talking about the worst digitals. Polaroids cost around $2/picture ($20 for a pack of 10 shots). So for the cost of 50 Polaroid shots (not counting the cost of the Polaroid camera), you can buy low end Canon PowerShot, which will take decent pictures. Certainly better image quality than Polaroid 600 film will give you.

>If you KNOW how to use a polaroid camera, the images come out just fine
Ah, I think you're misunderstanding my argument here.

Polaroid cameras are not marketed at the people who know how to use polaroid cameras. They're marketed at people who want to take pictures and don't want to wait for 24 frames and a 1 hour photo trip to get them developed. That niche is filled a hell of a lot more cheaply with digitals.

>And its not about the quality of the image, its the point that when it comes out of that camera, you can see a memory getting developed right before your eyes and as said before, its like having a hard copy of your work.
Which is why the 18,175 people in the country who want to keep polaroid around want to keep polaroid around. Do you think those 18,175 people are going to buy enough Polaroid 600 film packs to pay the salaries of everyone at the Polaroid plant? Are you still going to want to buy polaroids if it went up to $5/shot or $10/shot because the volume of purchase is just so low?

I'm sad Polaroid's going too. Polaroid photography is fun. But the writing was on the wall as soon as digital cameras hit one megapixel.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>166457

bullshit. the only decent polaroid cameras are the land cameras that use medium or large format lenses, and polaroid backs for 4x5's. the rest use plastic, fixed focus lenses.
>> des
>>166459
fuji's already got money in their own instant film, I'm sure they're interested in getting cheap IP.
>> Anonymous
>>166468
While you're right it's a niche market either way, I understand that in addition to impatient people and photographers Polaroid film is widely used in some specialty applications no one ever sees, like the F-mount is used whenever someone has to mount a lens for some odd reason.
>> Anonymous
Yeah guys, go ahead and dump history.

I can see Super 8 going out of style because the other gauge formats are just simply better.

But Polaroid is one in itself, there are no OTHER kinds.

You get rid of that, and you get rid of an ENTIRE line of crap for over 60 years.

It's like getting rid of television in place of something else.

Wait they've already done that...

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

The only niches I can think of that really *need* polaroid are people who use it as test frames for their medium or large-format film cameras.

One could make the argument that it's useful in law enforcement, where the physicality of a polaroid makes it a lot more difficult to doctor (and therefore very useful as evidence), but empirical evidence (see>>165871) says they're just moving to digital. The Sargent photographing our little crime scene was shooting with a Rebel XT.

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

>The SX-70 would like to have a word with you.
Given that film for the SX70 isn't made anymore (although they can use 600 with some heavy modifications), I don't think that really hurts his argument significantly.

>>166483
>Yeah guys, go ahead and dump history.
We're not the ones doing it. Polaroid priced themselves out of the market, and (thanks to their lawsuit against Kodak) insured that they would never have to compete to survive in their niche right up until they were made irrelevant.

I'd be happy if Polaroid film continued to be available. I'm one of those 18175 signatures on the lame Internet petition. But there's really no economic way they could do it.

>Given that film for the SX70 isn't made anymore (although they can use 600 with some heavy modifications), I don't think that really hurts his argument significantly.

The SX-70 is a glass-lens Polaroid SLR.
The mod needed to make a 600 cart fit in an SX-70 takes about 30 seconds with a box cutter.

I used to have 3 SX-70s and am 100% sure of these statements.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ

the sx-70 is also a land camera, though one without the mf lens.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>166507
Yeah, don't know why I threw in the "heavy" adjective there.

But still, you need to modify the film and modify the camera to let it use 600 film. I think the point Fence was making was that you there's a certain limit on the pure technical image quality you can get out of a 600-series polaroid camera. So while someone with lots of skillz could get good pictures out of a 600, they could get much better pictures out of a cheap digital.

I got in a car wreck once and I was so damn thankful that I had my Polaroid camera with me. I took photos of the evidence of the wreck for my insurance and it was SO easy. It's more believable because its the actual photo and not processed by a computer. See, its still very important. Not widely used but still important.

If I was an insurance company, I'd trust a Polaroid any day over some computer processed image.
