Nikon D300 is it worth it?

i was considering the D200 body since i already have a wide angle lense, a zoom, fixed 50, and 24-120mm i dont need to spend an extra 4 bills on a kit lense.

would it be smarter to spend another 400 dollars and just get the d300 body instead? what are the major differences of the 2 cams.

>>291535
Main difference is the viewfinder. D300 is 100% coverage, D200 is 95%; accordingly, the D300's viewfinder is slightly larger (since they have the same magnification); the D300 also has projected (as opposed to engraved, which throws off manual focusing) focusing points.

Other significant differences are high-ISO performance, one stop higher base ISO, color output (D300 is notably better), 14-bit (versus 12-bit) raw, forty more focusing points, better autofocusing overall, better weathersealing, and live view.

So this is one of the few camera body upgrades that are actually worth something.

D300 is a huge step up from the D200 in terms of image quality and color accuracy.
High ISO's especially.

I highly recommend it, its also a killer sports camera with the MB-D10, AF is very good at tracking and fast (much like the D200)

the D300 is a very nice upgrade from he D200. I had a D200 for over a year. It was a great camera when it was released. You will not regret getting the D300, without a doubt. I also had the 24-120 VR.. I hate(d) that lens. its sharp at like f/11.... god I hate that lens.

Long answer : most have been said already

Short answer : Yes

Look at the extra 400 as a longer term investment, the D300 will last alot longer since the tech inside is that much better.

Which made me think today today, the camera companies are gonna find themselves somewhat stranded in the next few as most buyers won't be upgrading since there's no real need to.

the D200 will be remembered as the legendary camera of our generation. nothing touches it for the price

If only. Lol consumerism.

Don't you mean D300?
>> Anonymous
nope, D200

it was the first step in the incredible comeback from Nikon

D200 is just another shit prosumer DSLR. D300 is probably the best DSLR yet, and the first that qualifies as a generally great camera.

In retrospect this is hyperbolic and focused too much on my own tastes in cameras, but the rest of the statement stands.

think of it this way, with the very first iPod

it was a blunt brick that held 1,000 songs in your pockets. that was a fucking revolution compared to others, then you get the newer iPods, sure they're nice and small, with newer features, but the iPod 1G was the first and will probably be remembered in the future as the legendary MP3 player to change the market

the D200 will be that legendary camera, the D300 is just extra fluff improved upon it
>> Anonymous
>>291898

You are delusional. The D200 wasn't such a revolutionary camera and will be forgotten with time. Just another stepping stone at best.

Cameras like the D30 and D60 from Canon and then the first Rebel camera will be more revolutionary for introducing cheaper digital SLRs and ever decreasing prices to go with improving performance. Digital SLRs for the masses.

>>291898

The iPod is famous for its styling, Apple marketing and being used by almost every motherfucker on the planet. D200 doesn't even come close to that.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>291898
Er. By that logic, shouldn't it be the D100?

obvious Canonfag because i didn't name a Canon for legendary camera

>>291909

nothing about marketing

>>291912

nope, the 20D was owning shit up back then. then Nikon came around with the D200 and Canon made everyone facepalm with the 30D. legendary camera for a legendary come back

No one gives a shit about brand horseraces. We care about cameras. For the reasons listed here, here, and here:

>>291553

>>291586

The D300 is a far better camera, both as a camera and in terms of image quality.

>nope, the 20D was owning shit up back then. then Nikon came around with the D200 and Canon made everyone facepalm with the 30D
The way I remember it, Canon was continuing to cockslap Nikon when Nikon was pushing the D200 because Canon had the 5D and 1Ds. I only remember seeing "Nikon's BACK LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER" articles and posts when the D300 (and, more importantly, the D3) came out.
>> Anonymous
>>291923

the latest iPod is sure as fuck better than the 1G iPod, but it won't be remembered as the legendary MP3 player that changed the market

>>291930

no one cared about full frame back then, except Canon, because it was still an absurd luxury. the D200 heralded the come back for the D300
>> Anonymous
>>291920

You sound like another crybaby masturbating to your favourite brand names.

The D200 won't be remembered by anyone like the iPod will be. Only a retarded fanboy would claim such a thing.

>>291933no one cared about full frame back the

...and with that you lost all credibility. Troll.

The way I remember it, the 20D came out and kicked lots of ass, and when the 30D came out many people facepalmed, but the pros rejoiced because the 20D dropped in price and still kicked lots of ass.

Then the 40D came out and kicked lots of ass, and when the 50D came out many people facepalmed, but the pros rejoiced because the 40D dropped in price and still kicked lots of ass.
>> Anonymous
it's not until the 5D finally hit $2,000 after 3 years and that Nikon finally got their own full frame and that finally Sony decided to make their own that people finally give a fuck about full frame

people talked about it, dreamed about it but no one unless you were pro or rich went out to get a $3,000 5D or $8,000 1Ds. people were caring about $1,000 Rebels

stop calling trolls just because you know nothing about camera history

The first crop cameras weren't cheap either but they were still bought, people cared about them and still were important. You are retarded if not a troll. You know nothing about reality. Lots of pros and amateurs were rocking full frame while you were crying into your drink and pretending to be an internet expert and wishing you could save a few cents to join in their fun.

>>291955The first crop cameras weren't cheap either but they were still bought, people cared about them and still were important.

okay? that has nothing to do with anything

>> You know nothing about reality. Lots of pros and amateurs were rocking full frame while you were crying into your drink and pretending to be an internet expert and wishing you could save a few cents to join in their fun.

again, what the fuck does that have to do with anything?

there is no special magic to any of those that made them stand out. the D200 is the very first body to offer fully pro features at a very low price and in a smaller package. it was unique and marked the come back of Nikon

i love how you saged to add in that last reply so i would miss it, inb4 i did it to avoid bumping a "gear thread"

OP, I definitely think it's worth it. In my mind, the D300 is way past the D200.
>> Anonymous
I've got a D300 and an MB-D10 and it is an amazing combination.

The AF speed and accuracy with 3D tracking is alone worth the extra 400. I occasionally do sports shooting for my campus paper and its awesome.
>> Anonymous
Oh and dont buy that kit lens. You'll get much better performance with separate wide, medium and telephoto glass.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
wow... this thread was so good... but alas... a shitstorm.

But anyway, allow me to make a bold statement.

The D300 is the best all-round APS-C DSLR currently on the market.

Now go buy it and shoot toyour heart's content.
