This isnt another gear thread, I honestly need your advice. I need to grab a Prime lens for my 40D (1.6 crop). This is my findings under $800 AUD

Does anyone have any experience with the mentioned lenses? Reccormendations? I'm leaning towards a nifty fifty, maybe 1.4 for build quaility. So yeah, PRIME THREAD KGO
Canon--
20mm f2.8 $799
24mm f2.8 $555
28mm f1.8 $759
28mm f2.8 $325
35mm f2.0 $439
50mm f1.4 $590
50mm f1.8 $135

Sigma --
20mm f1.8 $605

The 85mm f1.8 is outstanding.

It depends, like all lens choices, on what you plan to do with it.

What do you plan to do with it?

Personally I'm looking at a Nikon 50 f/1.4 vs a 50 f/1.8

I can't tell whether that .4 is worth $280 more.
>> Anonymous
>>182433
maybe not the .4 you get more, but the usm and averall built quality ... i'm on the cheap one and i can tell you it's like wow for literally NO money (compared to any other new and GOOD lens)!

How often do you shoot in dimly lit situations which would call for that extra bit?

Nikon 50mm f/1.4D is not usm (swm in nikon speak)
>> Anonymous
>>182433

you will thank yourself for saving the 280 that you could put towards some other equiptment.

the 50mm 1.8 is fantastic. if your used to shooting on zooms the quality will really surprise you.

oookay, but OP is a canonfag, so i guess that counts.

My googling showed that the 1.4 was sharper which I'm a fan of.

I don't do much low light stuff now because none of my lenses are fast enough but I'm looking to move toward that.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
where are you going to buy the lens from?

remember out prices in Aus are freaking hugely expensive compared to the states.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa

same with nz :(
buy from b&h or adorama, but shipping from the US rapes in the ass, so make sure that you are getting a good deal *with* shipping included.
I know that its the same price for the 50mm f/1.8D in nz as it is from the US *with* shipping.

Yeah it only really works with items of large numerical value.

I bought the 17-55mm 2.8 from B&H cost me 1450 with the exchange rates favouring the aussie dolllar... the cheapest place i could find (excluding D&D photographics since they're grey market) was about 2200

Obviously with a small item like the 1.8 it wouldn't be worth the trouble.

OP here.
I am leaning towards the 50mm 1.8 AND Sigma's 28 1.8. Altogether, pretty cheap, for two lenses, and it will serve me well until I need to upgrade again. Unless I am horribaly wrong in my choice, which in case, PROVE ME WRONG

I can recommend the 50mm f1.8. It's cheap and takes some incredibly sharp pictures. I think it's worth more than I paid for it!
