Plugs into camera, you press a button and it releases the shutter; it's for eliminating camera shake.

ah, cable release / remote release.

In ten years as a photographer, I've never once heard the term "cable stop."

Anyway, if it's an older manual focus camera then most likely it's the standard thread-in cable release connection that was universal across brands for years. If it's a newer camera, who knows-- you'll just have to look in the camera's manual or on the manufacturer's web site.
