Well, only inasmuch as he shoots really wide often. It's hard to try to emulate someone's style without using what they use. But like you said, it's not the -exact- lens that matters, so a 10-22 would be completely fine.
Nachtwey's work is so excellent because it's intensely thoughtful, involved and concerned. However, it's technically perfect, which allows the other aspects to come through clearly and beautifully.
