what equipment do you have available?
-keep shutter speed above 1/100 as you move around alot in the pit and faster shutter speeds prevents motion blur. So bump the iso up and use a fast lens if you need to.
in that regard, zooms with wide apertures are usually better than fixed focals if the band moves around alot.
-check out the light before hand or during the first song (i usually check out the lighting setup for the supporting bands to get an idea of what it'll be like for the headline act, that way it gives you an idea and can help to precipate shots)
-MOVE AROUND, get different angles and try out different lighting patterns, with any luck the venue you're at will have lighting guys who know what they're doing.
