i need a good "35mm film camera capable of full manual operation with interchangeable lens capability", because the college im going to next year for photography asks for it for the first year, but I know nothing of film cameras. I'm also gonna get a nikon d40, and was wondering if the 10mp ones are much more expensive? i dont go till september 2008 so i got plenty of time to learn how a film camera works...i know im a noob for not knowing

d40x is about 200 more than standard d40. There's another thread on here right now that covers other differences.
If you're looking for nikon, an n80 is a good choice if you want to continue with it. It's technically discontinued, but you can find a new body online for about 200, if not less. Otherwise it looks like a canon rebel k2 or t2 might be a decent choice.

If you're definitely getting a Nikon digital body, might as well get a Nikon film body so you can swap lenses. Nikon film cameras are, arguably, better than their Canon contemporaries.
>> elf_man
And if you get nikon for film, you might not want the d40, since it only autofocuses with af-s; most lenses you get for a film body won't autofocus on the d40, and depending on the lens might not meter either.

but dont let that stop you from buying AF-S lenses that will focus on the F80 *and* D40.

can you list those out? lens/body compatibility is a headache and you seem to be quite learned.

so film cameras are cheaper than digital cameras? what about film? i really know NOTHING about film

the bottom fell out of the film camera market HARD

You can get flagship film SLRs for peanuts these days and even MF systems are relatively cheap.
For your film body, I'm biased towards the FE-2 or F4s, if you want AF.
If you want to go cheaps N8008s is a great body with a nice and wide match "needle"

The trick with film is that you pay for each roll, up to five bucks a pop for quality film, and then you pay for processing. Which isn't all that expensive, but it can add up, especially compared to digital where you have no processing fees whatsoever. And it's a whole nother story if you want to get them onto your computer at a decent quality, but yeah. Unless you shoot a ton, it'll probably take a couple years for the cost of film to make up the difference between buying a film camera and buying digital.

My F90X has served me admirably over the years. Only complaint is my inability to do double exposures. They are going for pretty cheap online.

Get an N80 (or F80 if you live in the states) I can attest to the camera, I own one and use it and my D50 a lot. Its very similar in feel to the D50 (so also similar to the D40) And can AF with AF-s lenses aswell, And it has automatic aswell as the full range of manual settings, Only drawback is the wimpy flash sync of 1/125.

No autofocus with anything faster than f/2.0 (and almost nothing faster than f/2.8) makes me really glad I went with Canon.
>> thefamilyman
>>55808
f/2.8 zooms and telephotos isn't nothing to sneeze at.
the only faster lenses than that are 50mm and 85mm primes.

Nikkor AF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED
Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED VRII
Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR

some more if i already haven't included.
then on top of that is almost all DX lenses are AF-S

Hang on, nothing FASTER than f/2.0? So you cant AF with all your fast, expensive primes, which you got instead of a fancy body? A D40 is better than a XTi exactly HOW again?

With Canon its nothing SLOWER than f/5.6, or 8.0 for cross type sensors. No minimum AFAIK (the 50mm f/1.0 aparently worked on everything).

Thats a pretty messed up AF system Nikon has there. If i wanted old lens compatability, I'd get a Pentax (cheaper too) and be done with it.

Most people who buy the expensive (other than the 50mm f1.8) Prime lenses with wider apertures than f2, Won't be buying the cheapest, most consumer based DSLR on the market.

So i'm not sure exactly what the problem is, If I didn't have a D50 I would get a D40 since its high ISo's are very nice and much better than my older D70s.
I have a Sigma 10-20, 18-70, 80-200 and 105 that would all work on it, And I woulnd't miss my 24mm f1.8 and 50mm f1.8 all that much since they would be on my backup body.

Of course considering I have about 4000$ in lenses, I can probably afford to pick up a D80 or D200, (which I can) I just don't feel the need to. So my D50 and D70s will work fine.

why? I've been happy with the quality I've been getting with my Canon Rebel XT and my 135/2.0

>>55834
wait you guys only have a cheapo 50/1.8? you don't even get a 50/1.4?
Shit and here I thought canon was want to screw people over...

Hell us Canonites have 4 in production 50mm EF lenses to chose from, and one out of production ranging from the dirt cheap f/1.8 to the Macro f/2.5, to the freakish f/1.0.

Damm, having a Nikon AF must suck. No full frame either.

Reading comprehension ITT. Nikon offers a f/1.4 50mm.

A Nikon 35mm would make sense if you're getting a d40. However... Olympus OM4Ti > All.

>>55953
Nikon also has a 50mm f1.2 if you want to be picky, Its not AF though

You could get a Pentax K100D, along with a Pentax KM (or similar). This gets you access to the entire K-mount system (= a lot of reasonably priced stuff)
