The simplicity of the camera prevents you from relying upon any automation. That way, you're much more involved in the photographic process. They're also prone to light leaks, which means that you are never sure what strange things will happen to you film. Sometimes this ruins pictures, but often it produces really kool effects. This randomness makes you less careful about each individual shot, but encourages you to produce a larger volume of work. Basically the Holga helps train your eye and your brain for photography with "better" cameras. I for one learned how to properly use the "bulb" function, which allows you to keep the shutter open as long as you hold the button.
