I'm going to take a b&w photography class next quarter at my school, and i need advice on how to keep my pictures from having dust in the picture when i scan them.

I took this picture and scanned it into my computer. It has a lot of dust on the left side.

Clean your negatives before scanning, keep them in a dust-free enviorment as much as you can and ICE

usually i just heal it out in PS, ICE doesnt work on actual b&w film

it oddly worked when I tried to scan it in? I could have a nutty scanner, though that has a special feature

iirc hardware dust & scratch removal works by passing infrared light through the film to see past the dyes and take a image of the emulsion alone so it can subtract out the scratches, b&w film wont work because the emulsion is opaque to infrared

this looks like the film wasnt flat in or on the scanner, could be wrong though
