Yes, the faster a lens you can get, the better off you'll be. The 50/1.8 is 2 1/3 stops faster than f/4. So that means that instead of your ISO 1600 shutter speed being 1/50th, it'll be around 1/200th.
I don't know how well the Rebel pushes (stands up to being brightened in post-processing) at ISO 1600, but you can find out. Shoot a few underexposed test shots at ISO 1600, open the raw files, and slide the "exposure" slider up. That should give you a little bit more light, if it can take it at that ISO without getting too noisy.
So long as you can get a faster lens, you're not "fucked" at all. If you can't, just ask the people in the video shoot to do their stuff over again for the still camera, and use a flash. I'm assuming this is a music video or something equally non-spontaneous; going through the motions once more for the still camera shouldn't be a problem at all.
