Nikon D40 Anonymous
Hey /p/. What's with all the rage over the D40? I was planning to get it for an entry level DSLR to learn on. I don't want to spend much on a new camera, the D40 is around the right price and it seems to be able to do what I'd want it to. What are its major cons?
>> Anonymous
Its shit. No autofocusmotor meaning just a few lenses will autofocus on it.

No auto Bracketing.
>> Anonymous
i have no clue. The sony a100/200/300/350 beat it in all regards.

D40 is just a camera made of plastic and fail.
If you ever want to get into photography, don't buy a D40.

Buy something you can actually use for stuff like focussing, and exposure and stuff.

Any suggestions within the D40's price range? Looking around $400-600

Fuck the sony if your not a minolta-guy.
eos 30D or 400D/nikon D70s or D80.

I would not go any lower than that. If you cant find them in your price range, buy used.
>> Anonymous
go buy a k1000 and some film with developer instead
>> Anonymous
um buying a used dslr is tricky if you dont know the owner. having a bunch of dead pixels and no warranty is a bitch. Again, it depends how cheap you get it.

....0/10. try harder next time

wow. nice way to promote a horribly outdated camera.

>>147456

anyway if the op isnt a troll, what do you mean by "learn"?
>> Anonymous
OH god. Its another typical teenage bashing thread. Well done /p/.

For the op. The best way to buy a new camera is to go and play with a few at the store in your price range and see which one you like best. i advise buying a decent tripod b4 you buy any lenses/ flash ...etc.

The d40-d80switcharoo 15year old dude here.

Just get a nice deal on the d80+50mm. That's what I use and even though i miss wide angles, portraits/low light shooting are still awesome. Girls wanting and crowding you to take pictures of them just because your 50mm produces nice bokeh is a plus.

>horribly outdated

It may be outdated but its still a great camera. Film is also horribly outdated but not horrible.

Im sure everybody here who owns a dslr knows how it attracts too much attention. No need to emphasize it

Heres me thinking it was my ugly face and BO that was the problem. All i need is a D80.

NO WAY BRAH...owning a D80 is like having a second cock...only its black!

Finally, the 12-inch I've been waiting for. Bigma anyone?

You guys should try using a medium format... you'll get any chick that gets in your sight.

fix'd. maybe you'd get girls with MF back in the 80's, but today's girl is suave, sophisticated, and just knows how amazing canon is. she probably owns one herself!

I havent exchanged it for a d90 yet, mind you.

>stuff like focussing, and exposure and stuff

shit you must be a professional

dear OP, i just bought a d40, i would've loved a n xti or a d80. however i cant justify spending that much money (poor student etc.)

do not let the lack of built in AF motor deter you from purchasing, any lens with a built-in motor will AF, and if you can't/aren't willing to manually focus for some shots then you shouldn't be considering an slr.

Also the 18-55mm f/3.5 has received praise for being one of the highest quality kit lenses on the market.

the d40 offers an amazing price/performance ratio, if you are constrained by a budget this is the camera for you
>> M/A !n21TE7QU8U
>>147672
Too bad the most awesome lenses out there don't have an AF motor, and never will, and too bad lenses that DO have one, cost XBOXHUEG amounts of money.
Hence i did not buy a D40.

If you can live with the lack of AF on awesome lenses, go fot it.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>147677

lolwut. all of nikon's best lenses are af-s or af-i. have been for two decades.

Fast primes.

>>147682
Heh.

20/2.8
28/2.8
28/1.4
50/1.8
50/1.4
85/1.8
85/1.4
20-35/2.8

All come to mind as well-regarded lenses that aren't AF-S. The 20-35 was (probably is again, now that the D3 is out) a major workhorse lens for photojournalists for years, and the 28/1.4 is a legendary lens.

.... there's a $100 difference between the 2

>>147727

not when the d40 kit goes on sale for $450
>> Anonymous
oh wow, i'll save $150 dollars and wait until nikon updates all the lenses to af-s or sigma's $350 50mm

okay, absolutely great plan

i'd rather have a pentax with far more features than a d40

d40 owners always come out the woodwork to say shit like this

there's only one here but you know what i'm talking about

I wanted nikon, and the d40 with 18-55 and 55-200 VR is about the best deal you can get(I prefer telephoto focal lengths), especially since I got it to learn on and plan to upgrade.
Now, if any of my interests required fast primes that I needed to focus quickly with, it'd be annoying. Manual focus with my 60mm macro isn't too bad, I'm getting used to it pretty quick. The two lenses I got with the camera have served me well. The few times I've shot indoors with low lighting, my lack of a flash and general inexperience at shooting people had more of an impact than my lens aperture. So if he's interested in nikon, I'd say get the d40, but shell out 200 for the extra lens, and he'll have a hell of a lot to learn with.
>> Anonymous
since it's the AF-bashing of the d40 ITT: are the typical dslr newb going to get another lenses than the kit-lens, 55-200vr and/or the 50mm 1.8 at most to cover most needs? the only af-problem with those mentioned are the 50mm which, as we all know, doesn't AF with d-40.

*Most* DSLR newbies are going to use the Kit lens and nothing but the Kit lens. And then they're going to get bored with the camera and stick it in a closet and only bring it out on their kids' birthdays.

People who check /p/ are not the average DSLR user.
