I'm considering making the jump to D-SLR. Deciding between the XTi and the canon 40d. This would be my first jump into the market, which is why im considering the XTi. Would it be worth going to the 40d right away since I will probably be upgrading to it in a couple years. Also, looking for a good canon macro lens.

The thing about d-slrs is that you're obligating yourself to stick to one brand b/c of the lenses you will buy. The bodies will change over the years, but the lenses will always remain. If you were to start out canon and switch to nikon, you would be left with a bunch of canon lenses of no use other than ebay..and that will cause you to take a pretty heavy loss there. IMO, research it a bit more, look at the different lenses available to each brand, play around with each if you can, etc....just anything to help you in making an informed decision.

Ya, He better stick to just one make of camera... Sicne a Canon XTi and a Canon 40d are different brands...? Think maybe you were thinking of Nikon d40?

Don't get the XTi, it doesn't have the extrem fast shutter speed

theres a nikon d40, and a canon 40d

dont get the XTi, I used it in B&H. Its way too small. hurt to hold it because I have to tense my fingers so closely (I have big hands)
and I also used the 40d. is sexy.
its huge, black, and hard. over 9000 frames per second. but the kit lens sucks, so get like a 200mm f/2.0 as a macro.

go for nikon.
so, so much better than canon.
cannot stress this enough.

If you can afford the 40D, get the 40D.

If using a Canon and have Nikon lenses, use the NEOS adapter. Tim Burton basically had that setup on his 30D when shooting for Corpse Bride.

Well, the 30D and NEOS adapter was PART of the setup, I'll give you that.

Yeah, I blame Canon. That was just really bad branding on their part. I wonder how many sales they've lost because dumb people (who are some of the biggest purchasers of expensive SLRs) assume the 40D is the same level as the D40.

You'll also have to assume that once they realize you don't have a LiveView LCD on the D40, they'll return it for the 40D and take pictures at arms length.

I had that problem, too, bought the battery grip and was happy. Now my pinky feels unemployed on my new 40D. Solution: Buy Battery Grip. Yeah Christmas! Yeah Birthday! Yeah Japan!

LiveView sux. And by sux, i mean, "use is limited to special applications". By "special applications" i mean "put camera on tripod, mount 300mm lens, activate liveview with 10x digital zoom and watch the neighbours picking their noses"

Live view probably can be useful for shooting from odd angles, like when holding your camera above the crowd, or above water, but you'll have to buy that totally overpriced panasonic to get a flip-out screen.
