What do you guys think about a used Nikon D50? I'm planning on getting one over a new D40 just so I can use some old and cheap lens for it. Any issues when it comes to old cameras, or can they run fine even after 2 years of use?

It's wear and tear or even abuse rather than age you have to watch for.

only thing I can think of watching out for would be the shutter blades... but will replacing it be worth it?

D50 is a fine camera and in all ways superior to D40. Go for it.

Seconding this motion. The only thing you'd have to watch for is if it's been really knocked around and obviously damaged or if it's been really well worn (sometimes they'll say roughly how many times it's been used) and the mirror might be hanging on by willpower alone. A reputable dealer would probably mean it's in perfect order if they say so.

That's not too likely that it will be badly worn or damaged as that kind of wear and abuse tends to happen more with the pro cameras.

If it looks in good condition then it should be great for you.

"It's not too likely", I meant.

I replaced the Flash circuitry in my D50 after just over 20,000 pics.
At 34,000 right now, shutter blades are perfectly fine (Electronic shutter for speeds over 1/250 helps I'm sure)

Anyway D50 is a wicked camera, great low light capabilities and its a very easy to use camera.
AWB isn't the greatest indoors, but you can set it manually too..

Get it over the D40 for sure, if for no other reason than lens compatibility. The better autofocus system doesn't hurt, either.

I managed to snag a new D50 on amazon.com just after the D40 was released, I love it. the only qualms I have with it right now are: megapixels (in b4 MP dont matter), fps, and no command mode for flashes.

what about metering issues? I read somewhere that the D50 won't meter with old lenses? Do D50 owners have any problems with that?

I thought it was a guy.

It will meter with all AF lenses.

Only the D2 series will meter non AF lenses, so its not a "problem" with the D50.
(The D40 behaves the exact same way except the D40 can't AF with all AF lenses, just AF-s + HSM ones)

The D100/200/300 will meter with non-AF lenses, too.

Forgot about the D300 + D3
D100 does? I thought it couldn't

I just looked it up. The D2, D200, D3, and D300 are the only Nikon DSLRs which will give you all metering options on AI lenses. The D1 will only give you center-weighted average and spot metering. The D100 gives you no metering.
