"Cuba" and "Divided Soul" by David Alan Harvey "The Americans" by Robert Frank "Inferno" by James Nachtwey, although her parents may or may not want her having it... basically the worst events of the last twenty years graphically depicted all in one brilliant book. Wars, famines, genocides, etc. But if the parents would be fine with it, there's no photographer more talented than Nachtwey alive today. "The Americans" by Robert Frank. "Gypsies" and "The Black Triangle" by Josef Koudelka.
I'll post more later, and some links. It's 07:09 where I am and I've been up all night.
You should also know, though, OP, that much of this work is also available online. One of the best and most important photography books- "The Decisive Moment" by Henri Cartier-Bresson- hasn't been printed in decades and the books of it are expensive collectibles.
