Shot these with an ancient canon eos rebel G.
35-80mm lense 0.4m/1.3ft

Shot these about 12:00 to 1:00 got them developed at target (shudders) around 2:00 and just scanned them. Besides the cluster fuck that took place there What could I have done better?

This was literally my first time shooting film, I've only used a point and shoot nikon before.
So I'm really hurting for some help here, anything at all will really help me out.

thanks in advance.

Keep taking pictures. These don't suck.

by the way you described your lens you might want to read up a bit on the basics, but yes. you are off to an ok start. i feel the bottom one lacks any real subject. the top one the focus is a little weird. its not where i want to look.

For the top shot, I'd have bumped up to f8 just for the sharpness and to get a deeper dof for the truck... Maybe bounce a flash to compensate for the f8?

Get a really cheap older DSLR so you can experiment more.

Your composition in vastly better than the average noob, and composition is the most important part of photography. Learning technical details will come with time and there's no need to stress over it.

This is the best advice.

This is stupid advice. For now just keep taking pictures, don't worry about technical details. As you do start working on technical stuff, start with aperture, shutter speed, and exposure, don't worry about flash and lighting for a while. Number one most of all don't think about buying a different camera. Learn to use the one you have first, and there is absolutely no reason you can't experiment on film.

A Rebel G isn't ancient D:

Some great composition here, but I'm not sure whether you've missed focus on both or Wal-Mart messed it up. Might want to manually focus for shots like these - I'm not sure how many focus points your camera has.

"It features a high-speed selectable 3-point autofocus system with A1 Focus for improved performance, and Canon's exclusive AIM (Advanced Integrated Multi-Point) control system which links Rebel G's three-point autofocus to multi-zone metering for available light and flash."
