Okey, here's the deal: I'm in a photography class and we're going digital in febuary.
I have a Nikkon F90 with a 35-105 lens (nikkor D-series) and wanted to be able to use my epquipment on the new camera, but i don't know which camera i should get to keep using it.
Any tips /p/? (pic related, it's me on the right)

yeah, i've heared that digital system cameras adds like x1.5 on the mm. So i should get a better lens and not hope to use the old one then?

There's a 18-70mm Nikkor that's basically the direct equivalent of your 35-105mm for digital SLRs (with a bit of wide angle added). Or a 18-55mm lens bundled with most low-end Nikon DSLRs, which isn't as good, but still quite usable. Then you can use your 35-105 as a short telephoto lens when you need it.

Or, if you don't have any Nikon accessories except that lens and plan to switch to digital completely, you can just get any DSLR and lens you like. The 35-105mm isn't a particularly rare, good or expensive lens anyway.

D80 would be perfect.

>The beauty of the F mount that any old lens should work with any new Nikon camera.

Well, there are a few caveats. Some old non-AI lenses are incompatible with some modern cameras and will damage them if mounted forcefully; most low- and mid-end AF cameras (including digital) don't meter with non-AF lenses for no particular reason; the mentioned AF issue with D40 and D60.

sounds like a plan, but how much is the D80 nowdays? I don't have too much money to spend at the time.

Look used or refurbished and you can grab one for well under $600. I'd recommend checking out Craigslist.

Or save some money and grab a D70 or D70s, which is basically a D80 with a smaller screen and faster sync speed. Oh, and less of them megapickles.

Shit, I just looked on Craigslist myself, and there's D200s going for just a little more than $600. If $600 is within your budget, I'd pay the couple extra bucks for the D200.

lol, sorry for being lazy. I'm having a cold right now so my brain is working on 50%.
I'm gonna check my local auction sites for a used one.

Shit seriously? A D200 for $600? OP, get that if I were you.

Oh yeah, I forgot about non-AI lenses... If you're not looking for those non AI ones, then any old AI/AIS or AF-D lenses should be usable on any new cameras. The good thing about the D200 though is that it will meter with manual focus AI spec lenses.
