DV vs DVD/HHD ChrAWESOME
I have a question.

Why are DV camcorders still considered better than DVD or HDD camcorders?

To me the use of tape just brings me back to when we used to use VHS tapes, and I was under the impression we had moved on from then.

I wanna know if it's worth selling my DVD Camcorder and buying a DV one?

Thanks guys!

yea i found out first hand unfortunately with my first camcorder purchase...

got a sony handycam that takes DVDs...found that each dvd only holds about 30min of video and it was a rather awkward design. i thought it would be better since it was more expensive than the DV version of the handycam. but apparently not the case. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck...so i paid more for less.

miniDV camcorders have the flexibility of analog recording with close to DVD quality. With DVDs, you need to finalize the DVD before moving it to a computer to edit. Thus, you could waste precious space on each DVD if you need it immediately. miniDV is certainly superior to DVD as you can even re-record over previous data. But of course over time, miniDVs also degrade in quality.

I haven't worked with HDD based camcorders before. I would assume that the only drawback is that you have a fixed capacity. Once that fills up, you'd need to dump it somewhere else. Maybe there are issues with cycling. I'm just guessing now.

>miniDV ... analog
>DV = digital video as stated on tape in OPs pic

You can put a digital stream on a VHS tape too.

Obviously it was a stupid idea, but still.

Are you fucking trolling? close to DVD quality?

Yeah, I bet my HDR FX7 that shoots at 1080i is
only close to DVD quality. Fucking idiots.

miniDV has a higher bitrate.
>> OiD
The advantage of DVD is simply finalize and play in any DVD player.

DV/HDV = 25Mbps, Tape = instant archival, $2-3avg per 60 minutes. It can operate at altitude. DV and HDV require less CPU to edit than AVCHD. Until they make SDHC cards cheap enough for one time use, tape is still king.

saging on principle

If you're working in Final Cut Pro or something you'll have a lot better luck capturing from tape than trying to import some gay proprietary file type from your camera's hard drive.

Just a thought that assuming we buy a sony camcorder (and who wouldnt) then vegas will probably be able to handle it.

MiniDV is close to DVD quality, if you've got a good enough camera, the MiniDV video standard is DVD resolution, but shittier compression.

Remember kids, when choosing a digital video camera, it goes like this:

HDD/Flash > MiniDV >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DVD-R

Proprietary? 99% of HDD recorders use MPEG2 or MPEG4, which definitely are not proprietary.

Capturing from tape in Final Cut though, jesus man, you've obviously never had to do it.
Long story short, shit sux man, honestly. Ive been frustrated far too many times with that fucking process, mostly the fact that capture is in REAL TIME, so if you've got a 90minute tape, and you want all 90 minutes, its going to take NINETY MINUTES to capture. I cry myself to sleep at night thinking about how many shots ive lost to Final Cut chucking a shit over inconsistant timecodes from different recordings on the one tape.

HDD recorder = drag and drop, and boom, its ready to go. Maybe let FC convert to Apple Intermediate Codec if you're doing a lot of 1080p work with h264, just for the speed of rendering, but generally its far fucking easier to use a HDD camera.

lolwut?
>the MiniDV video standard
miniDV is not a video standard, miniDV is a recording medium, HDV is recorded on miniDV, so HDV is DVD resolution? yeah right.
>but shittier compression.
DVD has by far more compression than any format used on miniDV
>HDD/Flash > MiniDV
consumer camcorders recording on HDD or flash have shittier compression compared to miniDV, only professional systems like XDcam are superior to miniDV

MiniDV video standard = "DV".

MiniDV is just the most popular medium for that format, and everything else I said stands.
DVD uses better compression format, HDD recorders using h264 are the gold standard in consumer video right now.

You're a fucking idiot. >> miniDV is not a video standard, miniDV is a recording medium

DVD is 720x480 NTSC.

You can record just about any kind of fucking format on miniDV, including 720p, 1080i, 1080p, ALL are superior to DVD quality.

TROOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLL 3/10

ROFL. Does DVD use very effective compression? Yes. Is it better than footage on miniDV with HDV, AVCHD, DVCPRO? Fuck no, it's not.
