I was doing a some shooting with this the other day, but when it got to the end of the first roll, the film broke off from the canister when I started reeling it in. So now I have a camera with loose film inside of it that I can't really get out because I don't have a dark room.

I guess my questions are: is this common at all? is it the camera's, film's, or my fault, and how do avoid it happening again?

That's pretty uncommon. Did you forget to push the rewind release button before you started reeling in the film? If so, and if you put a metric assload of force on the rewind knob, it could tear the tape that attaches the film inside the canister.

If you didn't forget, it could be a problem with the camera or the film. It's pretty easy to find out- try a different roll of film with a different lot number and if it happens again then it's the camera.

actually, this is pretty common with the old rangefinders. the insides are all super sturdy metal, and the film levers aren't geared like they are in slr's.

pay attention to your frame counter, and when you get towards the end of the roll, advance slo-o-o-o-wly, or just skip that last frame all together. if you feel any tension, stop advancing immediately.

I've shot a lot of old rangefinders had have never had this happen. Maybe I'm just not a ham fisted retard.

Thanks, I did wind past the last frame and it got stuck half way, and I forgot to check for a rewind release, I guess it's the little button with a red dot on the bottom. lol I feel like a idiot now.
Thanks again

Take it to a camera store, they got little boxes with arm holes. I used to retrieve film for customers all the time.
