This is a stupid thread. I could make a case for why shooting M is better technique as long as you put a mote of thought into your shooting, but come on. If the exposure comes out as you want the mode you shot it in doesn't matter at all.

>> Anonymous
>>187330
You really must have some really fucked up fingers, if you're fine with M in a real situation. And by a real situation, i dont mean photographing some shoes in a home mad "lightbox" with your XTi.

How do you know the exposure is correct? Do you use sunny-16 rule or do you rely on the metering done by the camera and just roll the wheels (or dials in your case because you have some shitty amateur dslr) to center the arrow on the exposure graph?
>> Inanimate !3dXYfvdbBk
I shoot with a manual camera, so I guess M.

>>187348

There's more to it than just lining up the needles. You just have a lot more control over your photos, especially if you're shooting in weird lighting situations where the metering would give you an over/under-exposed subject.

tl;dr, the needle is just a guide. With a little experience you can tell if you need to increase or lessen the exposure.
>> Anonymous
If you can't use M then you should kill yourself. FOR REALZ HOMES.
>> Anonymous
>>187356
You can over and underexposure in bad lightning conditions by +-2 stops, so whats the difference?
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>187348
Oh quit your whining and butthurt attitude.
Also, I didn't take the ones in the "lightbox", 0/10 for effort.

And situations? I shoot shows sometimes and objects and portraits the majority of the time. Pretty fucking simple to control.

I don't use any particular method, I adjust with sense. If I'm in a hurry I use the guide and adjust the exposure up or down depending on how off it is.

Also, lol@ people who think that Av is accurate all the time. Have fun in your high contrast situations.
>> Anonymous
Im with OP.

I use fast lenses and like focusing on controlling depth of field. I already know speed will adjust accordingly, I dont need to have to move two values every time I shoot.

Then I use M for 'studio' object photography, where I have full control over lighting and the camera is generally on a tripod.

I wish my camera had only M and Av modes. I have never used anything else. It'd make the dial useless...which would free up room for something else.

Spot metering always, usually (but not always) with center focus point.

Av for daylight and when I don't have time to adjust for highly variable lighting.
M for low light, or when I have time/need to change for variable lighting.

>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>187414

Digital cameras don't think for themselves worth shit. I can't get teh effects I want, or the look, so i set it up manually. Works a lot better for what i'm going for.

With film, i already know what its going to do at different stops, and most of the time the film camera can think for itself.
>> Anonymous
>>187492

I'd disagree strongly with the idea that centre point only is useful. Using the other points is something that I'd suggest everyone becomes familiar with so they avoid the dreadful "focus and recompose" method.
>> Anonymous
>>187518
The meter and processor should work the same in a digital and film camera. I don't see why there would be any difference.

>> Pulng !3GqYIJ3Obs!!fcA
I agree. My camera is pretty much always in Av mode.

Occasionally i will switch to shutter speed mode with shutter speed at 1/80.

Manual if i am doing a series of images, bracketing or if im playing with lighting.

Either way, full manual for what I do is smarter anyway :)

>>187541
Unless I am shooting at night or inside, i shoot always in Shade or Cloudy.
>> Anonymous
I use daylight or auto outside. If shooting under artificial light without a flash I'll set tungsten, flouro or custom WB as appropriate as I find auto gets it wrong most of the time.
>> Anonymous
um.. what the fuck is wrong with all you people?

personally, my camera is on the mode that is going to give the best effect that I want.

If I wanna control DOF or do low light, thats generally Av. If I want to get blurred motion or freeze something, thats usually Tv.

If I just care about exposure and dont have a lot of time to fuck around with settings, P.

White balance changes for the situation and depends on how warm/cool I want things to look.

Enjoy limiting yourselves.. this thread makes it obvious why most of the photos here suck.

Which white balance settings you use will depend on your camera, whether auto gives the results you want, or a specific setting, and how much control you have over those settings. You should be changing setting to best fit the situation anyways, based on experience with your own camera.

>> Anonymous
mostly Av but I also go into M if I have full control or Sv if I really need to stop motion and I'm fine if it ends up a bit underexposed
>> Anonymous
>>187627
But if you're shooting RAW who gives a fuck about the white balance unless you know exactly what temperature it is (which is rare). That's why I just leave it on daylight and fix it in conversion.
>> Anonymous
M. I guesstimate exposure myself, and adjust my dials on the touch. Takes time to learn, but after that it's perfect.

Av sucks because it won't understand high contrast situations, and like all light meters, tries to get it at that 18% gray tone. This is not what I want, for example when shooting something black..
>> Anonymous
I can't figure out how to set my camera to auto.

It only has modes listed as P, A, S, M. And you have to hold down and button on the top and use a dial. I think it's pretty much impossible to do with one hand.

I wish I could get it to do auto everything. It's so hard to use.

Actually, I'm a PJ and I shoot in M, just about all the time. I only use AP Mode when I wanna just fuck around. Anytime I'm serious about a shoot, it's M.

I know my camera and lenses, I know when it's going to blow out the highlights or underexpose something. That's why you never go on a serious gig with a body you just bought.

I can understand why some PJs shoot in AP mode and I'm okay with it, but it's just not for me. I can instinctually and quickly adjust to what's needed.

This. Learn to work your gear instead of just following it where it takes you.

Although meters can be useful if you know what you're doing. I can estimate exposure right probably about 75% of the time, but it never hurts to double-check with a meter (esp. spotmeter pointed at something you want mid grey) and histogram.

M is god

If you know how to simply turn a dial left and right and do trial and error

Sure the camera can auto set the shutter speed/ap

BUT sometimes the camera is fucking wrong and your shot is over/under exposed

Depending what you are shooting.

in sunny days, i must go full manual and spend time adjusting- BECAUSE the camera cannot get it right for my situation

Auto is good for shitty shots and if you do not really care- basically auto is good too- but sometimes auto will not work it's magic
