HD video, and while Nikon's HD dslr's users are going to be fucking around with lenses that don't autofocus, lenses that do autofocus, lenses that meter but dont AF and lenses that dont meter at all, any of Canon's lenses will work perfectly fine with this baby. Yes they will. All Nikon lenses currently in production will meter on all Nikon cameras with a built-in meter. Old pre-autofocus nikkors won't, but that's still better than the hoops you have to jump through to even mount a pre-autofocus Canon lens on an EOS.

Except, you know, the 5D does 1080p instead of 720, and it can autofocus, and it doesn't wave like jello when you pan with it, like the D90 does. Oh and it has superior low-light performance.

You're not going to see any cinemas replacing their studios with 5DMkIIs, but for documentary, art and indie film-makers, this is the cheapest and highest quality way to get into an interchangeable-lens film system.

someone explain what all the hub bub about video on dslr is

is it because the much bigger sensor compared to normal camcorders?

can't normal camcorders have depth of field control as well?

>> Anonymous

>is it because the much bigger sensor compared to normal camcorders?

Not really, it's mostly because you can change the lenses out. Name me one camcorder that can do that. And once you've named me one, then look at the sensor sizes and name me one that has a sensor as big as on the 5D.

The interesting thing is that the depth of field on the 5D mark II is going to be more like IMAX film than regular 35mm movie film, because for 35mm movies they only use half the frame area of a 35mm photographic negative. It's really a strange and wonderful camera.
>> Anonymous
>>259656

>> Anonymous
>>259658

look dude, i'm not questioning you or the 5D, i know about still cameras but i have no idea about camcorders, i'm just asking a question

my friend uses camcorders like the xl2 or the hdr fx and i think they can swap out lenses

yes, i know they are using small ass sensors in them

so i'm asking if the big deal is just the depth of field control over those, which i think are considered pro quality camcorders

and my second question was is the depth of field control on a sensor like a 5D much much much better than on a xl2 or hdr fx because i know i've seen footage where they play with the focus and throw it back and forth and get good enough dof control
>> Anonymous
fuck I'm gonna sell my 40D and HC1 and get me a 5D mkII... what a pitty I'll still need to add OVER$9000
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>259662
Partly depth of field control, partly the really big high-quality sensor, partly the interchangeable lenses. Yeah, the high end Canon video cameras support interchangeable lenses (including EF lenses with an adapter), but it's like a 7x crop compared to 35mm film.
>> Anonymous
so pretty much

this _can_ deliver the same, or apparently better, footage that a "real" HD $2-3,000 camcorder can

and you can switch out a large number of lenses and have "cine" depth of field control

last question is, do xl-2 or hdr fx cameras actually have any kind of dof control or was the footage i witnessed simulated in post?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>259687
They certainly have some DoF control, but not nearly as much as the 5DII or D90 do.

Man, I can't wait for this thing. Does the OMG EXTREAM SENSOR SIZE mean that you'll have to stop down to like f/16 in order to get depth of field like that on a camcorder? Will there be shutter speed issues if you do? Who cares, it'll be really damn cool and look like a cinema film. If only it shot 24 fps instead of 30, but hey it's still pretty fucking good.

I personally can't wait to try this with a manual focus push-pull zoom lens. Smooth much? Hells yes!

Who cares? It's like getting an HD camcorder inside the excellent still camera that I was already going to upgrade to. I could make my own Koyaanisqatsi art film or something. And all manual focus? Admit it, it's like shooting with a 16mm movie camera and that's awesome.

I even have a small shotgun mic for my old camcorder that mounts on a shoe. Hee hee...this will be goddamn EPIC.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

>And all manual focus? Admit it, it's like shooting with a 16mm movie camera and that's awesome.
As I understand it, 35mm movie cameras are all manual focus, too. And the 5D's actually double-frame compared to 35mm motion picture frames...
>> Anonymous
>>260185
Oh blah blah you know what I mean. Not many people had 35mm movie cameras, but 16mm and super-8 were pretty common. I'd imagine that a consumer 16mm camera from the 60s and 70s would have about as much manual control as the 5DMkII will (focus, aperture, 1 or 2 shutter speeds).
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>260191
Sorry, wasn't intended as nitpicking your post. I was pointing out that manual focus like this is The Way The Pros Do It, since a lot of people are throwing up the lack of AF as a drawback to the D90's movie mode.

(I.e., I was reading your post as "And it's like using [crappy nostalgic camera]!" and pointing out that it's also like using pro cameras)
>> Anonymous
>>260288
Ah, true dat. That's what I like about it so much. It'll be an awesome challenge...get an old push-pull 45-150 zoom or something, and feel awesome about yourself when you successfully execute a perfect zoom and focus in a single hand motion. :D You control the speed of the zoom, the depth of field, the point of focus...

Actually, it would be even more perfect if you could convert the lens to have a stopless aperture ring. Can you imagine the awesome effects you'd get that way? Put it on a tripod and zoom, focus and stop up or down as you see fit. I predict lots of terrible shitty youtube videos (hopefully the price will keep it out of the hands of the real camwhores) but also at least one truly beautiful art film from this camera.

Ok, let me start again with this. I just wanted to be helpful but the other post went nuts, maybe I didn't explain myself properly. My fault, I apologise.

First, the 5Dmk2 HD video quality will be mind blowing. Period.

But because the 5Dmk2 camera LACKS (in video mode) the usual:

-fast AF and AF assist
-AE and presets
-servo zoom
-tiltable LCD screen
-on camera image stabilisation
-proper egonomics, handles and thought out weight balance
-onboard zoom-mic
-almost limitless DOF due to tiny sensors
...etc, etc (long list)

all those features present in any typical camcorder (priced from $500 to $10k), overall results will be very poor WHEN USED LIKE SUCH CAMCORDERS (hand held, all over the place, running after people, etc)

That's why I said any $500 camcoder will always get a better video result in the end. They're built to be used like that and do a decent job after all.

On the other hand, IF THE 5Dmk2 IS USED AS WHAT IT IS, that is, a 35mm CMOS sensor, 30fps progressive, 1080HD, 35mm EOS lens mounting, ultra shallow DOF, ultra (very ultra) sensitive, high resolution video camera, (in the likes of a $100k sony), results will be unexpectedly awesome.

Now, the first thing you'll need for the awesoming will be a good tripod. Not a monopod. Not even a photo tripod, but a video tripod with an expensive head.
>> Anonymous
If you DON'T PLAN to pan and tilt, scratch what i just said, any decent photo tripod will do. But you WILL want to pan and tilt and dont limit yourself to just static movements, believe me. And here's where problems will arise.

"Drift back" is how is called the effect when you pan or tilt a videocamera in a take (movement is usually rehearsed), and when you release the handle, the camera moves back a few milimeters, thus ruinning the shot, specially if a telephoto lens is used, as the few mm will be A LOT of displacement. The enormous resolution of the 5Dmk2 video will make that to be even more evident and catastrophic looking.

Unfortunately, a head that doesn't drift back, costs quite a lot of money, and as it's quite heavy, and therefore will require a very sturdy video tripod as well.

Forget about Manfrotto/Bogen 501/503/525, Vinten Pro-6 HDV, Cartoni focus and similar priced video tripods, or even some of the more expensive Miller. If you want a well balanced tripod with fluid motion, without any "bubbles" in his movement, without the cam creeping up or down and with smooth pans that don't drift back, there's no other way than to invest in a solid, heavy and expensive tripod, like a Vinten Vision 5-6-8 or similar tripod from other brands.

Bad news: this tripod+head will cost more than the 5Dmk2.

All this stuff is the reason I say it will make a great camera for Koyaanisqatsi-type art films, or documentary stuff. Shooting natural phenomena at super resolution, or making slow-pan arty films, or doing documentary work indoors where you're lit by a single lightbulb? It's going to be astonishing. For action sports and running around taking pictures of your friends it's not going to work out very well.
