It does what it's supposed to do. The quality rests on the lens.

However, I've had some problems where I'd hit the button to take the picture and it wouldn't do it continuously if I held it down or even if I released it and pushed it again. It sucks if you're trying to take action shots and the bitch wont fucking shoot. You have to like refocus it or wait a little bit.

Maybe I just don't know how to use it.

But for the most part it's aiight.

A D70s was the first camera I really used to any extent. While I only used it for about 7 months or so, I really fell in love with the control layout, the 18-70mm lens that was my only choice, and in the end all of the pictures I got out of it. That camera really got me into photography, and I currently spend my days selling cameras. Ironically I recently moved into a house directly across the street from my old photography teacher, and occasionally we head out and go on photo shoots around our city. A few times he has invited me to come into his class and show off my work and how i did some shots, how to do a panorama decently, etc.

Long story short I in the end bought a Canon 40D, and love it.

Oh, dont get me wrong the D70s is a fantastic camera, hell if i had the money I'd buy one as a backup to my 40D, and the 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6. But in the end after using alot of cameras and working with so many different dslr's, canon was the best choice for me, and since the d70s i was using wasn't mine at all. had I bought the d70s i might have a d300 right now, but canon cameras just work for me.

to OP, get the D70s you wont regret it.

Great first camera, if you're an intermediate shooter though you'll notice the limits for nighttime shooting reeaaal quick
>> Anonymous
I have one and I love it. Small display and noisy, otherwise reaaaaally awesome.
>> Anonymous
I hear the sensor is extremely noisy even at low ISOs.
>> Anonymous
>>171026
I almost only use mine at ISO 200 or ISO 1600, depending on the lightning. The 1600 looks pretty decent after some noise reduction but you'll loose some detail. At ISO 200, it is pretty much noiseless incase you don't push your pictures 2 stops or something. At ISO 400 you'll notice the noise if you'll look closely. Above ISO 640 the noise will be quite noticable even when you're not looking closely.
It's not a very good camera for low light photography but it definately works. I'd recommend it. Except for the noise and the small display it is totally great and I've had mine since august.

>>171028
It's basically a 6MP version of the D200's noise. They look very similar at 1600.
>> Anonymous
>>171037
Yeah, still a pretty old sensor so the noise is quite high. Still an awesome camera, really cheap used too.

Two control wheels too... the build quality is pretty fucking solid.

The D70 flash syncs to 1/500th, which I IIRC is the fastest for any 135-based DSLR.

I don't know how the D70s improves (or even whether it's like the D50 versus the D40) on the D70, but it does lose that shutter.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>171049
It's got a Commander mode for its flash, which is pretty money.

Traded mine in for a D80. Nice first DSLR. 6 megapixels weren't enough for me. Also it took all my old glass (with the conversion factor).
>> Anonymous
i bought a d40 first, then sold that shit and bought a D70. Noise is noticeable, way more than D40 had, but I fucking love it.
>> Anonymous
>>171434
If 6MP isn't enough for you but 10 is, you don't know what the fuck you're doing.
>> Anonymous
>>172017
Oh, and look at it this way: how many classic paintings do you see that are 3:2? Not many. It's an easy aspect ratio to compose spontaneously for, but I'd rather have something markedly wider if I had the insanely brilliant composition skills of a Jim Nachtwey or someone.
>> Anonymous
cropping is fine when your taking pictures that are beyond the limits of your current attached lens and the subject is time sensitive (not enough time to change lenses), but you shouldn't be aiming for a crop.
>> Anonymous
>>172014

oh yawn....nice try
>> Jesus !1EQ.kCAg9c
>>172017
That's an entirely different way of cropping than the one I was talking about. When you need to crop/resize for a different aspect ratio that's no big deal IMO. I'm talking about the kind of cropping in which you fuck up a picture and cut out a lot of the image in order to get what you could've done with your camera in the first place.
>> Anonymous
>>172024

i dont think many ppl will aim yo crop pictures but if i want a different aspect than i can shoot with whatever camera im using ill frame it so i know where to crop later.

there is nothing wrong with cropping, all this purity of photography is bullshit.
>> Anonymous
>>172027
Of course that's bad technique, both for learning composition and for image quality. But A) No one is advocating for just pointing a lens in the general direction of the scene and cropping later, B) you wrote this:

>When you look through the viewfinder of your camera, do you look for shots that will make you go "Oh man, this will look so good when I crop it later"

And C), again, the final display file/print is what matters. As long as the image is good, and one has enough to get the pixels/paper one wants at the quality one wants, who cares?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>171953
>right because every single application of photography gives you the time and situation you need to frame every single shot..........
Yep!

Well, not really. However: If you work with a lens for long enough, you get to know it. You get a feel for the framing you'll see as soon as you pull it up to your eye. People like Winogrand and HCB were famous for being able to just whip their rangefinder up to their eye, click, and put it down again after having effortlessly captured the proverbial decisive moment.

But I know I'm sure as hell not that good. I need to crop sometimes. But there's a difference between occasionally shaving a bit off the side--or even cropping down to a 1x1--and being so bad at framing that you *need* a 10 megapixel camera.

Six megapixels gives you plenty of room to crop. I've made 16x20 pics from my 5MP point & shoot that looked really quite good. If you're shooting with an SLR and have an extra megapixel's worth of space to work with, you should still be able to make good 16x24s and fantastic 8x12s with a significant crop.

However: I don't think this discussion is really about cropping. The guy wasn't thinking about cropping. More likely, the guy thought he needed 10MP rather than 6MP because LULZ MOAR MEGAPIXULS = MOAR BETTAR.

Four Thirds System FTW?
>> Anonymous
>>172107
Four thirds is never FTW.
A 4:3 crop out of my 3:2 camera has a higher resolution and less noise per pixel than your shitty 4:3 sensor.
Four thirds isn't a wider aspect ratio than 3:2, retard.
>> Anonymous
>>172129
Golden ratio = 1 : 1.618
3:2 = 1 : 1.5
4:3 = 1 : 1.3333
