Looking into getting a Canon S3 IS for Photography this summer. Is this a good choice for a all purpose type picture?
>> Anonymous
what all purpose do you mean?

you can get a allright point and shoot in auto mode for much cheaper

Mainly photographs of closer things, people, nature, good enough for fast movements too

well if ya got the money i'de suggest it, it has great macro(close up, it has a normal and super macor mode) and good setteings for fast movement, only thing is iso800+ and the photo's are noisy as all hell

Like I said in another thread, the Panasonic FZ-8 is a better camera for the exact same price. Both, however, are wonderful tools.

I'll agree with that, the FZ-8 is great... though having become used to DSLRS it's so light that i can barely take it seriously. It's lighter than my blackberry

I have one, they're ok.

Good if you know how to fuck with it and perfect settings.

the s3is is a good low budget cam.
0cm macro
great zoom
easy manual functions

I've got one, it's slow as sin to focus sometimes, especially if you're zoomed, if it was steady on a tripod it'd probably focus faster, our bloody tripod hasn't gotten here yet. :/

That's why one takes advantage of the huge depth-of-field of a camera with a small sensor and prefocuses.

So, get a fz-8 or fz-30 or if you can afford the extra a fz-50. They are all superior cameras. THat said the S3is is still AWESOME for what it is.

I was kind of wishing I spent another 100 USD over my A710IS to get a S3IS, when the Canon Cameras were on sale on Dell's website, last month. And being on /p/ sparked a interest for myself into DSLRs, also especially since I love optical zoom since from moving from A300 [All digital zoom, yuck].

But then again I don't need to be poorer than I should be already and my A710IS is doing more than enough for me.

Note to the OP, if you have the money to get it, but as a all purpose, it might be too tad over the top, but that flip out screen is a nice touch which now I wonder why they removed it from the A710IS, when they had it in the A6xx and stuff.

Also the CHDK loader is awesome, and helps pass time with the e-book reader and mini-games.

I know S3IS also supports it as well.
