Hi /p/. I think I've settled on a D40, with my price limit of $500 on a new camera. I'd just like to know where you think the best place to get it is? I'm okay with a used body, but iffy about a lens that's been touched. Should I just get the body used on eBay and if so, which lens to get for it first and where? I shoot mostly the average family stuff a point and shoot would be fine for, but I have a) a collection of original paintings I'd like to photograph, b) lots of toys I like to play around with macro shots of (the former is more important than the latter). Thanks.

Photo is of my Newfoundland Luther. Because I'm not even a photographer and I still can't stand that /p/ is 50% 'which camera?' threads, that aren't even accompanied by photos (good or bad).

I strongly recommend that you do not get a D40. In a few months to a year, you will regret it.

why is that =_=

Yes, care to at least explain why?
I'm just looking for a nice camera I can do whatever I want with. I have bad (BAD) experience with point and shoots, and generally walk around everywhere with a huge bag that's making limiting myself to another point and shoot pointless.

What else would you recommend?

Possible reasons:
1. He thinks you'll want a better SLR in a few months to a year.
Which is true, but that'll be true if you buy anything other than a D3, and true for the D3 only because of Nikon's slow product cycles. By all accounts, the D40 is a great camera to start out with, and if you ever do want to move up, you'll be able to do so.

2. He thinks you'll want a camera that can use fast prime lenses (which the D40 currently can't, except in manual focus mode)
Which I agree with, but I probably wouldn't think was a big deal if I weren't a Canonfag who loves his fast prime lenses.

3. He's just a Canonfag
Ignore him.

tl;dr: Go get yourself a D40. adorama.com, bhphotovideo.com, and keh.com usually have some good deals on used cameras and are a bit less likely to screw you than J. Random Ebayer.

I'd have to agree. The thing is, once you want to purchase more lenses, you realize that the D40 limits you only to AF-S and HSM lenses, which not only cost a bunch more, but aren't that great in number. There's only a single prime from Sigma that autofocuses on the D40 (and that's the 30mm 1.4f at $400). Also, small viewfinder is small. I'm trying to get rid of my D40 but the bodies I want are out of my price range currently (30D, 40D, D80), so I'm stuck with what I have for the time being).

Honestly, OP, getting a D40 now would be a good idea but just realize that odds are that sooner than later, you'll probably be in my position trying to unload yours for something better.

You know a D40 makes a great backup body if/when you upgrade. It doesn't become useless. :P
