Photo Classes Anonymous
So for the next school quarter, I've decided to take time to expand on my interests, which means taking some photography classes at a local art center. Here are the descriptions for the two I'm torn between:

"Learn both the technical and artistic skills in the art of photography. Students will first learn how to operate a manual camera and master its functions to compose quality images. Focusing on shooting techniques and how to recognize and create a “good photograph,” students will explore different films, f-stop and shutter speed settings, and lenses. The class will also spend time working in the darkroom to learn how to process and print photographic images."

AND

"Learn the ins and outs of your digital camera, from point-and-shoots to digital SLRs. This class will explain camera controls (from f-stops to white balance) and how to use the tools of digital photography to make better pictures. Through hands-on experience shooting and editing, students will learn basic image adjustments in Photoshop, and produce digital prints in both black and white and color. Composition, shooting strategies, and artistic issues surrounding digital imagery will be discussed. Students should have a basic knowledge of computers and bring their camera, manual, and any accessories to the first class."

I already have an SLR [Canon AL-1], and a couple of lenses, so i wouldn't have to buy too much extra equipment for the class. However, I was planning on getting a dSLR in the next few months/year. I personally am favoring the first class, since i would probably learn more, and the stuff would carry over to digital photography [rite?]

/p/'s thoughts?

Pic largely unrelated, but I'd like to learn to take a decent picture of a person. Most of my passable stuff is of nature or architecture

as a filmfag, i'd go for the first one. the basics of photography start at film i guess, and after all if you want to go digital, it will be a lot easier to understand stuff.
just decide what you wanna do (film/digital), if you can't go for the first.

Depends on who is running the course, but I'd probably go for the first one so I didn't end up spending time on Photoshop instead of photography.

Go for the first one. The ease of getting information for digital photography negates the need to really 'learn' the ins and outs of digital photography. You'd get more out of it with the AL-1 as well.

As for my SLR equipment, I inherited my father's

- Canon50mm 1:1.8 [could someone explain what that ratio means?
- Sakar 2x converter C/FD
-Bower auto tele converter 3x

Sorry to make this a bit of a gear thread, but can you make some comments on my current lens repertoire? Also, could people recommend me a reputable camera cleaner in the chicago area? This thing is almost 30 years old and could use some cleaning/replacement battery cover. Last thing, where is a good place for FD lenses? Fixed supply and depressed demand means lower prices, rite?

Maximum aperture you can go on that lens is f/1.8.

the 1:1.8 ratio is the focal/aperture (or vice versa?) ratio. basically means f1.8, so it's a 'nifty fifty' (50mm f1.8 prime)

your converters are extra glass so you will lose light and generally sharpness, meaning you will not get f1.8 with the converters attached.

i assume your 50mm will be truly a 'normal' lens because your film camera will be 'full frame'. you should likely look into getting something a little wider (less mm) in a prime (non-zoom) or a wide to short telephoto zoom, for a little more versatility

this is certainly not a bad starter kit, you should be able to produce some great shots and if you go digital in the future, your 50mm will make a nice fast ~80mm tele lens

No, his lens won't fit on any digital camera and still be useful. Great for film though.

why was my photo deleted?
