not if you find a good thunder storm

I bet they are. A strike can travel some 60,000 miles in mere seconds... I've yet to try lightning pictures. Not a lot of storms lately.

I once tried using a compact digicam during a bad thunderstorm, took almost a hundred pics while the lightnings were flashing around us, but not one of the pics got any good, so i guess you need to manually set the shutter speed lower and maybe use something better than a compact

Get a wide angle lens, open that aperture wide, get a tripod, 15 second exposures, focus on infinity, and try to capture something in the foreground to give it a sense of place.

If you're lucky, you'll get a couple flashes all in a row, and have a really full sky.

i actually took that pic from the upstairs bathroom window. f/4.5 105mm 15sec exposure iirc. it was raining kinda hard out there so i didnt want to take my camera outside.

because of the way the window is in the bathroom i could really use a wider angle or id get the edge of the window and other various things. went through about 15 shots to finish off my roll of film and i got this one, and one more but that other one didnt come out good.

I'm kind of pissed off now. We just had a "severe storm" here. I went out driving in it with my friend, we had to have been gone over two hours.

SO MANY times I thought "DAMN! I really wish I would have brought my camera with me." What sucks is I almost grabbed it before I left.

There were incredible opportunities for photography, and I just totally missed out the ONE time I didn't have my camera on me.

Does help to have a good storm with lots of lightning, then just set up the camera on a tripod, long exposure time, and click away for a few minutes. Chances are you'll get something eventually.
