this 1st pic (on the left)shows is mostly empty, except the lens hood for my 17-55 2.8 in the middle to get an idea of the size.. The 2nd pic, shows it with my 17-55 2.8 extended to 55mm on the left, that lens fits a 77mm filter on it so you can get an idea of the width.. you can see you still have room at top and bottom of the lens incase your zoom has a tripod mount on it, there should be room for that, as for height I would say that anything taller than a 580 ex II with the defuser on it would probably be too tall for this bag.
I'm not sure of your zoom lens height, but 9" would be close to the limit this bag can handle without the top bulging up.
as far as the dust, I havent noticed a problem with it.. the bag does hafe some flap attaching the side top, kinda like a hinge, it don't completely seal out the interior though,
