>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
This photo is better than the one you posted in that thread randomly.. but the highlight at the top right is distracting as shit.
I like your expression though.
>> Anonymous
>>123168
yeah it's definitely something to burn out, i was sort of on a limited time frame not knowing how long my nose would bleeding and all, so i didn't adjust where my flash was bouncing too well

also
>>123167
sorry i didn't pluck for you
>> Anonymous
Im impressed with how the 20D seems to auto focus alot better than the 5D. It really catches the eyes, whilst the 5d seems to go for the nose in most cases.. (not that the af actually matters anyways)
>> Anonymous
>>123170

i'm impressed with the auto-focus as well, but I feel like it has a more to do with the SIGMA lens than the camera body

you're right though, no one should be using AF anyway, but what do you want me to do for time-sensitive self-portraiture ?
>> sv !!vC9KZM3Ch/H
>>123172

Why should no one being using AF? Unless you have a split-prism focus screen, I find DSLRs to be a pain in the ass to manually focus sometimes.
>> Anonymous
It kind of looks like you just earned your red wings, orally.

What photo class are you in?

Also, in case you haven't experienced this yes, if this picture indicates how you generally shoot, be prepared to have people hate it.
>> Anonymous
>>123175

i'm in digital 1 right now

and no, my style is not myspace photography, i wouldn't dare bring this into the classroom
>> Anonymous
>>123174

Well.. If you are able to get good results using AF in portraits and macro, then thats great.

Since you're new here, I'll put it nicely. Please resize your photographs to a more managable size before posting.

'Myspace' photo wasn't really what I meant, but no matter.

Be prepared to learn a lot of useless crap in digital 1. You're going to have to do a lot of learning on your own.

What processes did you use on that?

someone try ripping out that nose ring o' yours?
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao

a whole bunch
but mainly shadow/highlight, curves, color balance and replace color
and other little processes that'd take too long to explain

I love using a desaturated copy above set to "multiply." Gives it that gritty "Saving Private Ryan" look
>> Anonymous
>>123174
Not the OP, but personally, I hate using AF just because it feels unnatural and unfluid. Focus, recompose, focus, recompose, compared to just turning a dial as the subject moves. Or even if using the other AF points, still having to have it re-lock focus after each shot just makes it seem so disconnected from the scene.

I guess the best way to put it is that manually focusing feels like using a tool and autofocusing feels like operating a machine.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
>>123201
not bad at all. great colors.
but yea, that blown out highlight at top right annoys the shit out of me.
also, i think you overdid the eyes. but that may be a subjective opinion.
>> Anonymous
>>123210
Thanks. The eye thing is just a stylistic decision, and I didn't really do any selective curves on anything but those, so the highlight was just a result of the corrections I did. Maybe I'll give it a round 2...
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao

go for it:D

keep in mind everyone who is "fixing" my picture

the picture i posted is straight off of my camera, no afterwork whatsoever

i do like what you've done with it though

Now fix the halo'ing around his head and you've got a perfect shoop.
You're good :]

I'm actually rather fond of the halo effect. That happened as a result of my curves.

i think i have to at this point.

i just tried going to sleep and figured i'd check up on this thread

i was very surprised to see people taking interest in it

OP here

my attempt at my own picture

this is the first picture i've ever photoshopped to make BETTER (i.e. not to be made slanderous) the only reason i know how to use photoshop at all is because i do a lot of drawings and such

also, how does i resize?

Fucking around in Photoshop is no different than fucking around in the darkroom. If what these people are doing isn't photography, then I guess Ansel Adams was just a big fraud who schlepped a view camera to seem kewl and get laid. Or something like that.

Although alot of these are overdone, IMO. A little sharpening and a touch more blacks and OP pic would be good to go. The high-key, low contrast look works for it. The cropping definitely isn't a good idea. Just clone stamp or burn out the highlight.

From memory.. uh.

- Feather 50 top right area. Replace color. Tolerance.. 80.. Select white area. Take lightness down.

- Curves. Took top right dot slightly down and left to flatten the high tones a little. Took middle dot and angled it down a bit to make the low tones stand out more.

- Selected eyes including pupils with feather 4. Replace color, selected brightest area.. Tolerance.. 70(?) and lightened slightly.

- Selected pupils with feather 3 and added slight blue tinge with color balance.

- Color Balance. Added yellow highlight in highlights. Red / Yellow midtone. Greenish shadows.

- Shadow / highlight. (forgot what I did here, basically played around till it looked right)

- Lens correction. Straightened image slightly but not too much. Added subtle vignetting. Cropped after.

- Curves to tweak contrast a little.

- Replace color. Selected darkest tone with high tolerance (80 I think) and took down saturation to make the green shadow areas stand out less

- Removed halo'ing with lasso around the areas present with feather 20. Replace color. Selected halo color and took lightness down with appropriate tolerance. Used Gaussian blur to hide any obvious edges.

- Unsharp mask with amount 500, radius 2.3, threshold 0. Faded to 28%.

- Resized for web format.
Jesus christ this took longer to type up than the actual shoopin itself.
Hope this helps anyway.
(just noticed, by tolerance i mean fuzziness)

I like the original better. It's much more true to life instead of being pretentiously shopped.
