Wow, that's got to suck.

How can a photographer with a D300 not have a spare CF card or two laying around?
>> Anonymous

a hint of jealousy?

I could get a hold of CF card in 10-30 minutes. If you can get a hold of D300 weeks before me, a fucking cf card SHOULDN'T BE A BLOODY ISSUE.

my 50mm f/1.4. i was fixing the front focus on it. awesome feature btw.

A hint? Fuck that, I'm jealous to the core (although I'm a canonfag, so I'd prefer a 5D to a D300 if I had to choose a below-top-end-but-still-high-end camera). But I was seriously confused as to how someone buying a high-end camera like a D300 didn't have some CF cards laying around. Didn't realize that the lower-end Nikon SLRs use SD.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>94885
Lower end Nikons use SD instead of CF? WTF. *adds to trolling materials*

At least sony ha.... i wont :P
>> Anonymous
There's no way I could hold out on not buying a CF card at a nearby shop to get that up and running. I'd be twitching like I was on a hotplate.

Surely you have a supermarket like Walmart or similar who sell these things cheap?
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ

Oh yes you will! Even if you do mutter it to yourself smugly. :P
>> Anonymous
>>94885
the D70 used CF, but then after that, the D50, D40, D80 all use SD for whatever reason. the good thing is i could share my memory cards between my D80 and canon A630 :p
>> Anonymous
>>94886
*Raises hand for preferring SD cards to CF cards.
>> Anonymous
>>94888
my CF cards will be here tomorrow, so only a days wait. the supermarkets are expensive though. they mark them up so much it makes me sad. i used to work at one, and like 512mb sd cards were $20 and people bought those. i laughed and got my 2gb SD cards online for $12.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94894

Not too long a wait then. You must be itching to try it though! :D

Did you try a few shots without a card and chimp it or with it hooked up to the PC?
>> Anonymous
>>94895
chimped of course. now let me take off this veil of civility and say HOLY SHIT THE LCD FUCKING MADE ME ORGASM. i was using this little brochure set sideways to fix the focusing on my 50mm and once i got the fine tuning dialed in, i could easily and very clearly see the dots of ink on a soda can. on the lcd.
>> Anonymous
>>94897

how does that work exactly?

the fine tuning part?
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94897

The LCD screen on that camera really does raise the bar for the rest.
>> Anonymous
>>94899
theres a bar that goes from -20 to +20. you take a test shot and look at it, then either set it to focus slightly closer or farther away from where it does. rinse and repeat until its super sharp. for my 50mm f/1.4 i had to set it to +18 to get the AF spot on. ill post comparisons later
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>94886

The D40 and the D80 were the first to use SD.

With the D40 it makes perfect sense being a 'consumer' entry level DSLR.
>> Anonymous
chimping on the D300 should be a privilege.

i just tried out the color tracking mode using my tv and a football game. the focusing point was following the players and stuff lol. it was pretty awesome
>> Anonymous
>>94903

that sounds awesome!

I'm really glad nikon has stepped it up like this.

Canon is ahead in america, but in japan nikon is the dominant one.

The nice thing is that because of this both feel the need to pull ahead, so they keep pushing better and better stuff.

I fully expect canon to step it up with the next d50 or whatever they release.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94886

You might also enjoy that many brands such as Nikon and Pentax use Sony sensors.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94909

I'm wondering if Canon will feel they'll have to step up their release and upgrade schedule to compete.
>> Anonymous
>>94912

considering that they JUST released the d40, probably the most they would do is lower the price a little bit.

the d40 is still very competent, it's just that this new nikon release is pretty cutting edge.

They can't push forwards the new release too soon or all the people who bought the d40 will bitch and moan, and it would also be VERY costly to do so.
>> Anonymous
>>94914

fuck, I mean 40d.

stupid nikon and canon having ridiculously similar names...
>> Anonymous
the next thing will probably be the new D80. the D80 was announced around half a year after the D200, and now that the D300 is out, that is the next logical thing!
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94914

True. I doubt Canon will be too happy with lowering the price and seeing their mid-range gear pushed more into the budget areas either. Some of the folks who bought it earlier will bitch and moan and the snobs won't like the idea of their "semi-pro" gear getting cheap enough for budget and beginner users.

There's no way for this to work out well for Canon. It seems like Nikon have sucker punched them. The only thing Canon have still got up their sleeve is the revision of the 5D, whatever it will be called. I can see them making sure it will have some impact on the market beyond simply being a cheap alternative.
>> Anonymous
>>94917
i do believe the 7D has been announced
>> Anonymous
>>94917
Considering the D300 is basically a pro camera minus the square form factor, the 7D has to be some sort of downright classic or Canon is in a pickle. From what I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if the D300 wound up a classic.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94918

Has it already had a press release on it? Well bugger me. I'll have to go Google that now to find out the gossip.
>> Anonymous
>>94919

I'm quite sure canon will be able to step it up.

from what I can tell it's not a matter of them scrambling to keep up with technology, but rather attempting to trickle it into the market in order to allow them an easier time and more constant cash flow.

Because of the nikon d300 they'll probably have to open the floodgates a little.

glee!
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94921

I've said it before and I'll say it again: these 'tech races' with the brands are great for us lot as consumers. It also stops them from giving us a trickle of tiny upgrades forever. Although as someone here pointed out before it does lead to more fanboy hate rage going on. Worth putting up with that for the improvements.

It hasn't. I check several other photography news sites every day, and there's been no mention of the 7D other than "Yeah, we all assume Canon's going to come out with this real soon now..."

Man, I'm really looking forward to the 7D coming out, though. It'd better be fucking awesome. Stupid Nikon, makin' my team look bad. ;)

>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94928

Hah. I know what you mean. The "7D" is the only big release Canon users have got on the horizon for a while as far as I know. Perhaps it'll be more feature-rich like the Nikon camera. A faster FPS wouldn't hurt either as the 5D seems to be tricky for people wanting to get action shots. I think this one is really important for Canon. If they fudge this one it won't look god. The "autofocus scandal" with the updated 1D was bad enough. ;)

It'll make the current 5D stocks drop in price a good amount too. Good for anyone looking for a bargain.
>> Anonymous
going back to the D80, the screen is like im looking through a tiny brick of frozen piss. 3fps of the D80 seems like the speed i would get if i were to press the shutter in single shot mode with my nose. i like how theres no useless scene modes. just M, Av, Tv, and P.

After this and that article on how you should *push JPEGs with curves*, I don't see how anyone can take Rockwell seriously again. I won't be.

And anyone who (paraphrase here) "shoots too much to deal with raw" and who isn't doing professional work with lots of clients or whatever (and every pro I know shoots JPEG, but at least one who didn't who have an excuse) is shooting too many frames to have much worthwhile end up in them.

And am I the only one that thinks that Active D-Lighting he's orgasming over ruined the little value that image had?

Not having to worry about small trivial functions allows you to place more emphasis on the art of it. Also, "ADL really does improve my biggest complaint against digital cameras. This feature automatically identifies highlight areas that will be lost, and does its best to bring them under control. It works, and it works automatically."
>> Anonymous
>>95165
Tell a painter that part of his painting will be "automatically" done for him and see how he reacts.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>95216
Painters != Photographers. The majority of the grunt work of creating an image is already done automatically for us by the camera and film/sensor. The difference is just where you draw the "Grunt work I can let the camera do" vs. "Creative work that I need to do" line. Rockwell considers futzing with the metering and exposure settings outside of some light tweaking if the camera gets it wrong to be on the "grunt work" side. Other people will say you're not a real photographer if you rely on an electronic meter or automatic focus.
>> Anonymous
>>all posts mentioning ken rockwell.

Ken Rockwell isnt really someone we should try and emulate. Hes contradiction wrapped in irony, the perfect example of someone more interested in cameras than photography.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>95227

I haven't read much of his stuff, so I'm curious as to why so many places hate him. He seems to be very successful too from what I've seen. His name pops up all over the place. It's hard not to suspect people are simply jealous of him, but maybe he's done something dodgy I've not heard about.
>> Anonymous
>>95227
Then he goes on about how gear is not important.

Irony indeed.
>> Anonymous
>>95222
Here's a better example: don't you think a writer should proofread his own work rather than relying on spellcheck?

A good photograph is a good photograph, but I'd argue that in most circumstances, going auto-anything is a bad idea. The "grunt work" is part of the process. You're a programmer, right? You should know better than anyone that a computer can only do what it's told to do, and no more. It can check your scene against thousands of different exposures and guess one. It can't take into account whether you need a fast or slow shutter speed, large or small depth of field (I know you shoot Av, but Rockwell said in that article he shot at least a few of those shots on Program), how much noise you can tolerate, it can't do "expose to the right," and so on. 90% of the time it'll end up with a correctly exposed scene. A correctly exposed scene isn't always going to be *right exposure,* and I don't just mean in terms of the amount of light that hits the sensor, which I know you can fix with compensation. And the other ten percent of the time it's off? Well, you're screwed. If you're shooting manual and using spot or center-weighted metering (so you know what it's doing) and doing it right, you'll always get the scene exposed exactly as you want, within the technical limitations of your equipment.

You're a "real photographer" if you take photographs. You're a good real photographer if they come out well. But the easiest way to get a decent result very often can make it harder to get a great one.
>> Anonymous
>>95232
He's just a somewhat clownish guy who stumbles through photography and sometimes comes up with useful and/or correct stuff and other times makes an idiot out of himself. (Like the whole "Print at CostCo!" bit)

Yeah, he's doing something right, in the same way McDonalds or Wal-Mart is.

I don't think he has any sponsorship deals, just the thing where if you click on an Amazon link from his site, he gets a little bit. He's been adamant about not having any ties to Nikon or Canon.

He's a decent guy, but he thinks he's a lot more of an expert than he really is. Some of what he says is a matter of opinion, but he says a lot of stuff that's just plain stupid. The best example is what I mentioned: he doesn't think anything needs to be calibrated, and thinks that neighborhood consumer photo labs (his example is CostCo, but he means anything like that) are the way to get artistic photographic prints made.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>95239
>don't you think a writer should proofread his own work rather than relying on spellcheck?
Actually, I believe that argument better illustrates my point than yours. Go find me a writer (other than, you know, the ones writing manifestos in the woods using handmade paper and ink derived from their own effluent) who doesn't use spellcheck. They proofread for sentence structure and organization and clarity of thought--i.e., the creative part--but they let the machine handle stupid simple things like typos.

And being a programmer, I know that doing something tedious by hand which could easily be automated isn't a mark of wisdom. Definitely override the computer when it's wrong, but don't ignore it when it's right just because it's a computer.

That being said, if you find you get your best results shooting RAW in full manual with autofocus off, go for it. It's not my place to criticize someone else's technique if it gets them good results. I think the point that Rockwell tries to make is not "ZOMFG PROGRAM AUTO IS THE ONE TRUE WAY", just that you might be surprised at how good the results are when you do trust your camera to sweat the small stuff and use your big, squishy, artistic human brain solely for things the computer can't, like composition, exposure adjustment relative to the base, and knowing-where-to-point-the-camera.

Yeah, film has the nice property where it doesn't clip hard when it gets overexposed in the highlights like digital does. It sort of gradually tails off. It's called a "shoulder". And there's a complementary trailing off in the shadows which has a similar term but I can't remember what it is now (Toe? I'm sure a filmfag can enlighten us).

It's one of those reasons a lot of people still shoot film.
