Hi /p/. I've never owned a real camera before, my mother always had those WalMart ones, and I'd like to get one because we're getting a new dog soon.. we lost both dogs this year and in retrospect I'm very upset she didn't take more than about a dozen photos of them. I don't know crap about cameras but I do know I'd like to be able to change lenses for fun. I don't have nearly enough money for a low-end digital SLR, though, so it's not even in the question. So I was wondering what you thought of the Canon EOS Rebel K2, and/or recommendations on similar cameras in this price range (especially if they're popular enough to buy cheaper used, I don't mind used).

PS how expensive do the batteries get on these types of cameras, or are there any good 35mm SLR type cameras with rechargeable battery packs like the digital ones? (I don't see why using film necessarily has to mean using crappy batteries).

You could always get a K1000 off of Ebay. Totally manual SLR and will accept most new K-mount lenses, and if you buy the appropriate adapter, you can use M (screw mount) lenses too. Just make sure it's not one of the made in china K1000... I've heard some nasty stories about those.

If it really bothers you, I'd wager you could sell the S3 locally for as much as you paid for it or just a little less.
Ebay prices for modern electronics are usually way less than you can get from local nubs.
