For a Starter which Nikon would be the best D40/50/60/70 or even the 80?

Would it be best to start of with the D40 or would there be any signifigant advantages going higher in the D series.

dead fucking horse but

D50's are better and you can probably find them cheaper.
D70's and D80s are better cameras yet, but the D50 should be enough.

D40 is a newer but largely inferior model.
D60 is a D40 with an arbitrary numeric value of 20 added to its name.

D40 and D60 bad.

D50, D70, D80 good.

D80 is the best, doesn't matter whether you're a beginner or a pro.

D70(s) is the best performance/cost camera, D50 doesn't have a front wheels and grid lines. Especially if you're buying it with the kit lens, best kit lens ever!

D40 is cute. It's really lovely, small and fast, powerful enough. I'd pick this.

D40/D40x/D60 might be cute and all, but it's a bad investment, even for a beginner.

D50 lasts longer.

D80 is overall better than any of those, and still in production.
