Yeah, if you're dangling over pointy rocks, or you're at Niagara Falls or any situation where there's significant danger of dropping your camera, definitely go with the neck strap. If you're picking up the camera for one shot of a woman, inside, where you're already using both hands to hold the camera? They have ergonomic hand grips for a reason.
If you're really so paranoid about dropping your equipment that you miss good shots, you should invest in cheaper equipment. The point of photography is to make photographs, not to keep your equipment 100% pristine for all time. If you disagree, go buy a collector's edition Leica and seal it in a glass case filled.
