advice for a beginner Anonymous
i just bought a eos rebel xt. i have read it isnt the best camera but it isnt the worst. the lens that comes with the body is 18-55 f/5.6. i know a lot of bands and they asked me to come take pictures of their live shows. very low light clubs so i have to open the shutter up real wide and i get many if not all blurry photos. once and a while i would say 20 out of 250 shots are worth keeping. would sigmas 28-70mm f/2.8 be fast enough for low light "club" photography?

f/1.8 and ISO 1600 ought to be fast enough. One might not have much shadow detail sometimes, but generally people aren't going for that shooting this sort of photograph.

yea spending grands on a lense is def not an option for me. i am poor lol. the camera itself was a big deal out of my pocket.

Buy a used 50/1.8 then, its going to give you a massive boost over your current lense. You will just have to learn to cope with the length.

A tip for shooting this stuff without a flash: learn to hold your camera steady and watch people; even in a club or on a stage people are still sometimes and a really slow shutter speed is usable. Often, these moments are also moments where people become less "random-guy-in-a-club" or "random-guy-in-a-band" and you can get some more personal, emotional photographs.

Also, OP:

Don't worry about how many photographs you get. Focus on making a few good ones, not a bunch of ones. Understand that concert photography is probably the most difficult sort to pull off well.

Bump your ISO up to 1600. You're fucked anyway; better to be fucked with noise than motion blur.

Shoot in raw. It'll help deal with all the technical problems of low-light photography.

Most of all, look at the work of great concert photographers like Jim Marshall. (You've seen his work, even if you don't think you have. Type in his name along with Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison... pretty much anyone... and you'll see a photograph you've probably seen before.) The best thing you can do to improve your photography is to look at good photographs.

Clubs are different from gig photography. When photographing a gig, you don't never ever use a flash.

Well yeah, most of the time im flashing DJs and PAs who dont give a crap about it.

but then bands tend to be lit a hell of a lot more so its much easier to not use a flash.

50/1.7 is what i use for low light when i cant use a flash (minolta!) and i use it when i can flash too because it looks awesome.

You don't need a flash if the club has even remotely decent lighting.

No, you don't, its rude to flash the performing artist in the face all night anyway. Flash is pretty necessary for portraits of club-goers often, but In my experience it isn't necessary for artist typically...
