Architectural/Landscape Photo Anonymous
Yo /p/imps. I have a Canon XTi and am an amateur photographer. I take mostly architectural and landscape photos and I was looking into getting a new lens. I looked at the Canon shift/tilt lenses, but they are a bit pricey, and since im not really advanced, they seem too complicated.

What would you guys suggest? I figure it will be a wide angle, but any specifics? thanks bros

don't even look at the tilt shift lenses, they are for studio work primarily.

Get the 50mm f1.8 for starters, then for wide angle theres a few choices, Canon has an 11-22, Sigma has a 10-20, and tokina has a 12-24, All are good depending on what you want to use them for, but the Canon is the best quality wise)

thanks for the feedback on the tilt shift. i didnt want to really shell out that kind of money for something i had no idea how to work. i'll look into those wide angles.

I was looking up reviews for a Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II Lens. It seems like its good, but a lot of comparison to the Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM Lens. But which one is better? They are both relatively cheap (the price of either one isnt a problem) so I'm not sure what to get. I don't know exactly how these fit in to architectural/landscape photography. (i am new to this, so I dont know exactly what everything means and what to look for.) Can anyone explain for me?

I don't know exactly how these fit in to architectural and landscape photography. I also took a look at the Canon 10-22mm EF-S lens. Big price tag... and not sure what exactly to use it for.

I guess i need to ask... Can anyone explain to me (since i am new to the subject) of what kind of lenses are primarily used for architectural and landscape photography and why. I want to understand it before i just go buy a pretty lens. Also, any other good accessories to have for the XTi?

Get http://www.ptgui.com/ or it's free counterparts (enblend, panotools, etc). This is how you can skip wide angle lenses completely.

Thats really cool. But thats not exactly what I would be doing. I mostly take pics of architectural details and whole buildings. I also take landscapes. But very very rarely anything where i put together multiple pictures to create the one.

I think it would probably be good to have a wide angle lens anyways. But can anyone answer the questions in my previous post

50mm f1.4 only if you need to create extremely shallow DOF's or take low light pictures, otherwise the f1.8 is a much cheaper and almost exactly the same optically choice

It sounds like your kit lens is already good enough for you, Landscapes you usually don't want TOO wide, and since you probably have the 18-55mm, getting wider than that might be overkill.

Truth is you probably don't need anymore lenses, so why bother, if you do interior shots it might be smarter to invest in a flash, or nothing at all.

You can use PTGUI to merge photos of "whole buildings" into one, it's very hard to capture an entire building decently in one photograph, or an entire landscape. PTGUI can also be used to correct perspective in photographs, which is very much required for architectural photos as they require straight lines (can also be used to correct distortion).

Been doing some research online. These are the lenses that I have seen recommended for architectural and landscape photography.

What do you guys think of these? And can you explain why they are good for architectural and landscape photography?

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM
Canon 10-22mm EF-S
Canon EF 20mm f2.8 USM
Canon EF 28mm f1.8 USM
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM

Im going to tell you what to do, faggot.

Buy a 17-85 mm USM AF/MF CANON IS LENS.
its a good lens for an amature/ huge step up from the faggotry of the original lens.

Or, if your gonna be a cunt. buy either a 10-24mm or a 70-300mm, depending on what you want, the 10 is a super awesome superwide angle lens, and i would suggest that you ebay it all or buy used somewhere else, its cheap.

17-85, golden all around lens,
10-24, golden ultra wide,

pic included is from the 17-85mm one of my fav members of my glass family.
nigga.
