Underwater photography:

Does anyone have any tips for how to build an underwater SLR housing? I don't want to spend the money on a EWA bag. I saw someone posted a link up here a few days ago about building one, but does anyone have any other links/suggestions?

I'm going to be using slide film in an old SLR I don't care about. If it leaks, I'd be more upset about having saltwater in my slide film than ruining the camera.

Thanks

inb4 water-filled camera because you were cheap

For diving? Oh man, I wouldn't want to risk anything that way. Are you sure you wouldn't mind your lenses and camera getting filled with ruinous salt water? The depth you're going matters too. If it's a splash in a puddle then you can get away with less than SCUBA type work.

The hard cases are the only reliable thing I know of for diving.

there's a tut floating around that tells you how to make one out of an ammo can!

look it up

Don't care about the camera - it's a crappy olympus SLR that I paid $10 for, that has so far eaten $20 in batteries. Not rare, baseline cheap features in a film camera, I honestly don't care if it gets ruined. I don't really want to use the thing any more because it costs so much in batteries and I have many other nicer film bodies.

It's not going to be scuba depths, just medium-depth snorkeling (maybe 20 feet?)

HAH, just found it. It's by kipkay, I've seen quite a few of his other hacks - why didn't I notice this one?

Thanks, I'll look into this thing. There's a place by my house that sells big ammo containers like that for cheap.

Anyone have other suggestions? Experience with homemade stuff?

Wait a sec... I just realized that if I take this thing on vacation, I'll probably be strip-searched at least 10 times before I get there because I have a fucking ammo box in my luggage.

Dont listen to them! make it yourself! I did... well it leaked but what ever, I still got some blurry shots and the camera did not brake even if I had water in the case.

I did it for my sucky compact digital 3MP. took a plastic container for keeping a wallets dry. Then I just made marked out how the camera should fit made two holes, one for the lense and the other to press to shoot and power. The one for the lense I used a plastic lip from a spraycan or something, at the top I glued the glass from a dia (projector negative holder) fragile but should take some bars. Then I had silicon in the shoot button, on the inside I got this plastic you can shape on your own and shaped it to put the camera in place. I used silicon for all the gluing considering they glue fish tanks with it I was not afraid.

Viola.
It leaked at the original isolation.

Good luck
