My mom just bought a Canon Rebel XSI Anonymous
I've never used a camera outside of a camera phone before and I was wondering what are some cool tricks to taking killer photographs with this thing.

I attached a picture I took. It's a little blurry but I thought it looked cool. It's my amp.

The trick to taking killer photographs is leaving the house and think about what you're shooting before you shoot.

Don't listen to the people giving you unjustified shit OP, seeing as how you just got the camera. Taking pictures of shit that hits you randomly is cool. You'll have to pay attention to Shutter Speed though, or you'll end up with the picture you posted (very blurry).

You've got the right idea when it came to the composition and trying to accentuate the DoF.

Too true. Take pics of what interests you, after all, you're most likely gonna be the main person looking at them. Also for close-ups use a tripod to reduce blur from you shaking.

looks like you might have an eye, OP! Take a photo 1 class at your local community college. Learn about aperture, shutter speed, and depth of field. Then go nuts. :)

Ok OP from now never use the auto function again. Put the camera on aperture or shutter priority and in no time you will start to learn the relationships of these with depth of field and motion blur. Sure fine, these are nice photos if you were selling these items on ebay or just practising with your new camera but now its time to leave the house. Look at photos you like and identify why you like them. Then go outside or whever and take some photos that someone may find interesting.
