Sup /p/ussies.

What to get? D40, D80, or D300?

I have a beginner's apt, but I want something that'll last me awhile w/o having to upgrade so much. I can probably get the D40 and D80 now, but for the D300 get a job over the summer and work. So worth the wait or what?

Pic unrelated.

well, you can determine the exposure by trial and error or with an external meter, but it's still so inconvenient that only .1% of people are going to use it.

i agree that trial and error/sunny 16/light meter is the only way, but its not as difficult as ppl think or makes it out to be.
I use my old Nikon mf lenses on my D70 body, its really not difficult at all!

The problem is that any entry level Canon will have more functionality with Nikon MF lenses (with a cheap glassless adapter)

Except aperture coupling.

I can estimate exposure and usually do, and test shot + histogram is the best meter possible, but it's just easier and faster in tricky lighting situations to have a meter.

Get the D300 of course, providing you have the cash to pay for it.

No reason why you shouldn't grab the D300.

I mean if you're willing to spend time and effort into learning the craft then by all means go for it. It'll last quite awhile. And if you don't like it, or realize photography isn't interesting to you anymore, you can always sell it. :/

yeah if you have the money get the d300....if the d200 is anything to go by than the resale value will still be good in two years or when the d400(whatever) comes out.

the question is: what lens is he going to get???????

if you work and save over summer the price of the D300 will have dropped probably $200 or so. Im about to buy one in the next fews days. I cant wait any longer.

What lens does anon recommend?

shit??it depends on two things really. how much money you have and what you want to do with it? i would say go with the vr kit lens bundle(Nikon 18-200mm) as cheap as you can with the d300. it probably all youll need for a while...it may seem expensive in contrast to the body but i heard nothing but good thing s about this lens and am planning to get one with my d300 myslef.

As the other guy said, it depends on what you want to do, but you'll get more use out of a good normal lens than a shitty 18-200. More focal lenghts does not automatically equal more versatile.

i say go with the lowest price body for now and buy lenses that will be applicable in the future. then save for a long while until things are cheaper / better. then re evaluate what you need in a camera and buy accordingly.

p.s. if you haven't already invested in lenses look at other brand dslrs as well.

D80.

its a great camera and well within your price range, i assume your a student right? high school or college? but yeah, won't let you down and has pretty much evrything you need for a beginner.
