of the "older" style manual cameras, what are some of the best? i've heard pentax is great. advice?

I really liked my Minolta SR-T-SC II. To the point that I'm tempted to try to get its shutter timing issue fixed, even though I have a perfectly serviceable Digital Rebel XTi and Rebel II S.

I own two Pentax K1000s, and they're WONDERFUL cameras. Absolutely wonderful. I trust the meter on my K1000 more than the 3D Matrix Pattern meter in my Nikon D50. It's simply a beautiful mechanical device. It even has mirror lockup! (though it's a bit of a sneaky trick)

I suggest you get one, if only for the fact that the K Mount used in the K1000 is still in use today, and the lenses are incredible. You're basically assured a good lens if it's prime and says SMC.

The king for me is still the nikon FE-2. If you're going to be tricky and say electronic-timed shutters don't count... I'd probably go F2AS

thanks for the tips. i do love the fact about the mount. keeps lens simple.

Mirror lockup? Do tell!

funky stab motion on the shutter release will kick the mirror up but not trip the shutter. some samples are better than others for this but you can get used to it enough that it's consistantly repeatable

Bingo. It's like you lightly tap it, flicking it just enough to flip the mirror up, but not trip the shutter.

What's the purpose of mirror lockup?
>> Macheath
>>52147
Reduce vibration of the camera from the mirror flipping. Useful when taking long exposure shots.

Pentax KM.
Same as the K-1000 but with a depth-of-field preview and a self-timer. Great, solid camera.

I do not understand. If you are taking a long exposure, why does is short jolt from the mirror going to matter?
>> ac
>>52155
Because it's a short jolt.

Are you sure you're in the right board?

Feather touch FTW! I had no idea you could do that. I seriously just killed like 4 frames playing with it.

I've got the exact same minolta. Beautiful camera. Part of the frame advance lever fell off, but other than that it's in great condition.

So you don't agree that a brief camera movement is less of a problem with a 20 second exposure than a 1/30 second exposure??

Olympus OM-1 FTW, just had mine all resealed and such about a year ago, AWESOME camera, super compact, fully functional SLR with mirror lockup and DOF preview.

Just because it has 20.99 seconds more to expose the shot doesn't mean the vibration in that first .01 seconds won't blur your shot.

In fact, I'd say it's *more* of a problem with a long exposure. With a fast exposure, the shutter's too quick for the vibration of the mirror to contribute to the blur. With a long exposure (on a tripod, so no camera shake from your hand), the mirror vibration can be a significant source of camera shake.

I've got a couple questions myself:

1. What are the differences between the different old Pentax models?

2. How large are they?

3. What are the must-have lenses for one?

4. What's better: the K-1000 standard or the K-1000 SE?

(I'm thinking about getting into film photography with one.)

At the prices all these camera go for today, I STRONGLY suggest you buy a professional model SLR, on e-bay you can find any of the Olympus, Minolta or Pentax professional models for almost the exact same price, and often times cheaper than the entry level SLR's like the K1000.

Like I said before, I think the Olympus OM series are some of the best 35mm SLRs you can get, the Pentax K models are the same big boys as all the other SLRs of the time, heres a photo of my OM-1md with my Minolta SRT-101 (another phenominal camera IMO). you can tell the size difference big time, the Pentax K models are the size of the Minolta. The K model (the KM does offer self timer and DOF preveiw as stated above) also offer no self timer, no DOF preveiw, no motor drive option, and no interchangeable focusing screen. All of which can be found on the OM-1, which also has a larger than normal veiwfinder veiw ;).

Anyways, there are tons of great SLRs from that time period, I obviously am very fond of what Olympus accomplished with the OM series of cameras.

My main STRONG suggestion is to buy a pro-level SLR of the time which will cost you the same amount (sometimes cheaper) of money, ebay baby! and be prepared to dump money into it if nessecary, re-sealing, cleaning, circutry (most of all these cameras are fully manual, but you need a battery for the light meter, most of which were Mercury based, you can plop a newer lithium(?) cell in, but its not going to give you a reliable voltage feed unless you have the circuit modified. So, be prepared to dump some cash into it if nessecary (it isn't always, and will vary from body to body).

Better solution to the battery problem is to get a Wein cell or a CRIS cameras MR-9 adapter that'll let you use an easy-to-find silver cell.

When I went to photo school the best SLR was
considered to be the NIKON.
The best pro.21/4 sq.was the Hassablod.
And the most 4/5 for the money was the Calumat.
Pardon my bad spelling. Mike

1. How's Olympus's glass? I've heard rather good things about Pentax's.
2. How loud are the shutters on each of these?
