Interesting light draws the eye; in this case, it pulls my eye away from the driftwood, which is mostly in shadow. The lighting does nothing to bring out the texture of the wood, either. For texture, you probably want to get in even closer if possible; otherwise, go further out, frame it, give it some sort of context. All we have here is "piece of wood", you didn't do anything with it. The take away is, it doesn't matter how interesting the subject is if the light sucks, and google for tips on composition.
