Sorry if this is asked much but what does /p/ think of Holgas ? I'm looking to get one for Christmas as a starter camera for a friend. I realize it's probably going to become an unhealthy habit so I'd imagine she'll work it up.

In b4 stupid hipster shit ect.

its stupid hipster shit. theres no way around it.

Holga's are kind of a bad idea unless you have a lot of money (or your own darkroom) to process the film. Also, it's only good for "learning" if you want to learn how to take shitty, uncomposed photographs of fire hydrants.

If you want a cheap medium format camera, go for a Lubitel. They go for about $20-30 and are actually capable of taking good pictures if she is so inclined. The focusing screen sucks, but at least you can focus it and it has a proper range of aperture and shutter speed controls.

Holga is a bad starter camera. It's not going to teach her anything about exposure because it's all pretty much guesswork with that camera.

Holgas would have made sense 40 years or so ago. Now they are pointless.

Holga's are shitty cameras. You can get much better cameras for a whole lot less. They are also ugly as sin. They don't produce those cool hip Holga images most of the time. Most of the time they produce ugly crap... every once in a while they produce an image where the corner shadows and light leaks look good as far as composition goes.

Ger her something nice and vintage if you don't want to spend much. A Kodak Brownie, or a Argus C3 brick. Ebay prices are gonna be the same as a fucking Holga. And they take decent pics... with actually useful and attractive viginetting and whatnot.

They're practically toy cameras. Not something to purchase for someone who wants to seriously get into photography. But if you just want to have fun then its a fun cam. I've seen some good photos taken with them though. A lot of it depends on luck.

If you're looking at a Holga as a starter camera for your friend, an old russian rangefinder would be a better alternative (Fed-2). They're cheaper, more solid and would teach your friend better when it comes to photography basics.

get your friend a disposable camera for her first.

anything is better than a Holga

haha, I totally got a friend a holga for a christmas present this year. It's alright though, since it was part of a secret santa deal where the gifts were supposed to be gag gifts.

You are all angry, bitter people.

I shoot almost exclusively with a Holga and I can safely say that glass lenses are for ASSHOLES.

It's true. My wonderful collection of asshole images would never have come out so clear and crisp without glass lenses.

Holgas *are* toy cameras. That's the whole point. Bad choice for starting out in photography, but a hell of a lot of fun for someone with a little more experience who wants to do something funky now and then.

I took this picture back in 1978 during one of my high school track meets. The camera that I had was a Yashica Mat-124G. The picture sucks, but the focus is right on. That Yashica cost me several weeks of time bagging groceries, but if I had to save up for a 35mm back then, I wouldn't have been able to take any pictures until after I graduated.
