Noob here. I found this camera that someone somewhere had. It's the Minolta Maxxum 300si.

I also have a Canon SD800 IS. I want to move on to DSLR's, but wondering if there's anything I can learn using the Minolta that I can't on my p&s camera?

It comes with the standard zoom lens, that's all.

You can learn to shoot film with it.

I seem to recall that the 300si is fairly limited in terms of manual controls, though, so it might not be that great as a learner SLR.

You can use it to learn about film etc and if you like it there are new sony cameras that take the same lenses (not really relavent if you only have the kit lense)

have some fun with it and if it grabs your attention come back in a month with some pics and we'll let you know.

I have taken some pics with it. But they were all very noisy. But at the time I used it, I thought I could just point, click, good picture.

I've learned a lot more since then, and since it's my brother's camera I don't have it handy to find out what exactly I can control.

I'm not too interested in film right now (I have enough to learn with digital as is) and I don't recall it having much in the way of manual control.

But I'll have my brother bring it sometime and take a look at it. But from the sounds of it, it wont do me much good. But who knows.

Given I take about 500 pictures a week with my p&s for the last 8 months, I'm thinking of just buying a D80 with 18-200 VS lens and diving in headfirst, and figure out to swim while I'm at it.

Go to Ken Rockwell's site. He has a lot of useful tips and information for you. That combination you mentioned would work well enough.
