How small objects are practically possible to photograph using ordinary lenses(no microscopes)? What is it that eventually stops you? Optic artifacts? insufficient light? focus?

Focusing distance faggot. That's why reverse mounting rings and dedicated macro lenses exists.

Wtf are optic artifacts? Besides, at that scale, it stops being photography because composition options such as DOF/selective focus, and creative framing stop existing. It's just gear wankery and WOW factory. BOOOORING

stop existing... i think they're more prevalent than ever.. it takes a lot of skill to coordinate a scene in extreme macro, because of the limitations, that occur. that doesn't mean you can't take advantage of them, or manipulate your subject to change how they interact.
