Anon who was asking for tips on live show shots earlier today. I got a few that came out okay, noisier than I would have liked but everyone makes mistakes, you know?

I'll upload more as I go, this is a mostly untouched copy of their audio and lighting guy. He sang a cover of Santeria with the band.

Noiseee.

Again, most of them are probably pretty bad pictures. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun tonight, though, and the band offered to buy a few of the pictures so I'm pretty satisfied.

Tips For Live music photography:
use a low aperture (preferably lower than 3.5, lower you get the better)
800-1600 ISO
shutter speed should not be under your zoom (Eg. zoom at 50mm Then use nothing lower than 1/50)

3.5 was as low as I could get for the first pictures I was taking. Limited by the kit lens, ya know?

I "borrowed" an 85mm at f 1.8 for several photos which all came out a good bit better.

yeah i know what you mean. im trying to save up for one of the canon L lens's with a nice 1.4 but theyre quiet expensive! and iv just bought myself a nice canon 580 flashgun soo im gonna have to wait for a while :P
id like to go to some real gigs rather than local ones and get some shots but i need to build up a portfolio first and see if i can find some sort of publisher or somthing

Your photographic skills are not up to par enough to warrant that purchase. You would literally just be wasting your money, because your pictures wouldn't look much if any better. Work on the basics first.

This is very off.

1. ISO 3200+ is kosher, too. Go ahead and use it.

A huge myth. Everyone quotes it, but if you know how to hold a camera medium telephotos can be handheld down to 1/25th or less sometimes. With IS, anything short of supertele is fair game down to about a second-1/4th, depending on how up one is at the moment.

3. From a quick look at that guy's portfolio, he doesn't seem to be that good. Also, the hard part of concert photography is skill, not equipment or anything.

OP: Just get the 50/1.8 and, to taste, either the 28/1.8 or 35/2, and for tighter shots, the 100/2. Get the 50/1.8 first, since it's $80, and buy the others as possible.

Now go study photographs and other visual art to learn composition, and practice handholding your camera and timing yourself to catch the best moments (and the moments where the performers are least moving) in a concert.

Not a myth. A rule of thumb.

Which is to say, it's not a hard and fast rule of physics that if you shoot at slower than 1/f you'll get blurry shots, just as it's not a rule of physics that if you shoot faster than 1/f you'll get sharp shots. It's just that, all other things being equal, you're a lot more likely to be able to handhold your shots at or faster than 1/f, even if your technique isn't the best, than you are going any slower than that.

Just because good technique and good tech make it possible to shoot way slower doesn't mean it's not a good general guideline.

The man speaks truth. I handhold 85mm stuff at a 1/60 all the time, but I also take care to brace myself against something, breath out while making the exposure, and generally calm myself.

If you CAN shoot faster than your focal length, you should, unless you're going for intentional blur, which is also cool.
