Hi, first time /p/oster, long timer reader.

I've never really used an advanced camera. I only have experience with basic point-and-shoot auto settings digital photography. I was wondering if you guys could recommend a nice digital camera that allows me to manually adjust focus, exposure time, etc, while still allowing me to use it as a snapshot camera when it seems appropriate. My price range is around $350. Picture is a d40, which is what my friend recommended.

A Canon A570 IS point-and-shoot will give you all of these manual functions for $150 or so. If you want an SLR like the D40 though, $350 isn't going to cut it.

Absolute cheapest DSLR, that is not used, is probably the Olympus E-410, you can probably find it for a little under 500$ with the lens.

But then you've got the problem of having an Olympus SLR, lulz.

Oh, just for the record right now I have a Canon A530 5.0mp. Maybe it has nice custom features that I don't know about.

In that case, RTFM. Your camera does all of these things.

It has nice custom features like night portrait mode, landscape mode and flower mode.

And let's not forget extrem fast shutter speed mode.

Good thing I LTFM.

Also, this camera just feels awkward and low-quality.

You can download the manual in pdf form on the Canon website.

Save your money and buy a DSLR if that's what you really want.

this sounds like a job for some sigma dp-1

Nothing is a "snapshot camera" with a lens that large on it.

And yeah, you've pretty much got the thing you're asking for right now. Sensor is a little small, but the quality's still going to be fine.

if ur gonna go nikon anyways save up the extra 100 for the d40x....higher mp and more features!

Shut up.
More MP = more noise.
Get the D40.
It's the cheapest DSLR, cheaper than the Olympus, I think. Also, more lenses for Nikon.

I don't remember about the noise, but one day I was an immense loser and decided to read through the dpreview page on the D40x for no reason. Shockingly, it has noticably more dynamic range than the D40, even with more megapixels.

If I was in the market for a camera with one control dial, a crappy viewfinder, and almost no autofocusing primes, I'd buy the D40x over the D40 for the DR.

douche...its not just more mp.

theres other things that make it better
and more mp doesn't always mean more noise if u kno how to control it

>>123086
hahaha nice!

d40 is a good camera
great price too

Looks like /p/ isn't really a big fan of Canon in general.

>>123286
More MP does not mean more noise. This is dependant on the size of the sensor.

Op, take some more time if possible and try and save a little more. No need in throwing away 350 when you can get a decent camera for 500. If you can't wait, go with pic

Currently, the 600 syle of film for those cameras comes out to a dollar a shot. If you're a digifag, That would be expensive.

A buck a shot is expensive even compared to high-end 35mm film.

Lessee...

Decent film: 8.00 or 8/36 = .23 per exposure.
Processing: 14.00 or 14/36 = .39 per print.

62 cents per pic. Realistically, if you went to a pro shop it'd be about 89 cents per print.

Shoot slides or print your own, it's cheaper and better.
Provia $4.89 = ~.14 per exposure
Mailer $4.99 = ~.14 per slide
28c per pic. Velveeta would be a little under twice. (wish fuji still sold bulk tins)

Tri-x 400 50' *$24.95* = ~.07 per exposure
Soup + your time = $lolnothing

Or just work with one lab a lot and get to know the owner. I pay $2.50 for C41 processing and then use their light table to choose prints from the uncut roll.

My expenses:
Packet of 3 Fuji Superia 400 = NZ$16
Develop and uncut = NZ$6
Cost of scanner = US$1500
I never print.

I never used to save for shows but my minolta shitscan died, again, and I couldn't resurrect her.
