I know, another help topic....but I decided to get an SLR...which? Anonymous
Heres my story in a super nutshell:

Beggining of the digital era, I got a digital camera for convenient pictures. Picture quality was bad, so upgraded to the JOYOUS Sony f717 a digital.

It was great, but it was BIG! I tell you, it was too much. So then, I got a compact camera which I generally regret till now.
I had no idea how bad they were.
FInally, the time for me to go back to "quality" pictures is reigning on me (hopefully).

Im thinking about getting either of the following:

-Canon XT Rebel
-Nikon D50 (D100? D200 is best but is too WAY too pricy)

I am a camera-noob and I've heard what everyone says: Its not the camera, but the photographer. I understand the point being made, but I've seen how a crappy camera can really ruin things for years.....so if anyone can help me with a good camera selection (and lenses!!) that would be incredibly appreciated.

Comment too long. Clickhereto view the full text.

Both the D50 and DR XT are great cameras, and luckily they've been superceded which means their prices will be well within your burget.

I recommend you going down to your local store and checking out both cameras and just see how they feel in your hand. That's how i decided when i wanted to choose between a D70s and 350D.

Because otherwise, the lens systems are not that far away from each other.

Thanks for everyones help so far, does anyone else have any comments?

I dont want to be screwed like when I got my CAnon SD400 so I really want this camera to last this time.

Take a look at the newest Olympus cameras, especially the E-510. I haven't tried it yet (local camera stores are kinda slow), but it's loaded with every function and gimmick you will or will not need, and the reviews on the internet are almost uniformly positive. You can get a two-lens kit for about $900, or maybe an one-lens kit and an external flash for $1000 if you want to shoot indoors.

Be warned though that the selection of lenses for Olympus is somewhat limited now, so if you feel like buying a lot of lenses later, it's probably not a good idea.

A lot of people believe that nikons 'handle' better than canons. To find out which is right for you, you'll have to spend a little time with both bodies. Being a canon guy, I can recommend the ef 50 f/1.8 as an awesome and cheap starter lens if you decide to go the canon route.

Can't go much wrong with a Canon or Nikon SLR. Either way, I'd recommend a 50mm f/1.8 as your first lens purchase (aside from the kit lens, which you should also get). Both Nikon and Canon have a cheap 50/1.8, so it should still fit into your kilobuck budget after buying a D50 or Rebel XT. They're both pretty much the cheapest lenses from their respective companies, and insanely high-quality (especially given the prices), and *fast*. Everyone should have a 50/1.8 (except for D40(x) owners, who can't autofocus with it).
