Hey /p/, so I got a letter today from a uni I'd applied to asking for a preliminary set of photo's before they'd even interview me/look at a portfolio. I have to take about 6 photo's on the following theme:

"How do you define yourself, how do others define you?"

"Who do you think you are and where do you fit into British culture?"

"Think about the catagories you use to define yourself"

BAH, I'm an 18 year old Britfag, very few of us have a real identity at this age - hell, a good portion of 40 year olds have an identity crysis.

tldr: Any ideas for how to go about this shitty question, /p/? Inb4FightClub

Picture unrelated, but cute.

Are you good at art/photography?
if not, how do you plan on surviving the interview if they DO consider you?

I hate philosophical questions like that.

"If you were a fruit, which would you be?"

"If you were a color of lipstick, which one and why?"

THIS is your identity, duh. You're not a chav, youre not an emo, youre not a myspace kid. Illustrate this- instead of saying who you ARE say who you are NOT, leave it to the people viewing to make their descisions on where you fit into society/culture by showing them where you dont.

If you think those are philosophical, pick up some Camus or Wittgenstein, or hell, even Bernard Henri-Levy, and prepare to shit braincells.

This is a bad idea. It doesn't take much of an artist at all to just say, "Oh, I'm not an absolute moron, but those filthy [insert slur here] are."

Speaking of Camus, he put it better than I can: "No great work has ever been based on hatred or contempt... Every great work makes the human face more admirable and richer, and this is its whole secret."

Create an affirmative vision of independent self-identity, instead of just "Oh those goddamn emo chavs on Myspace!" And if you're not sure what that is, reflect that ambiguity. A great part of art is questioning and searching. Find and show your identity in the search for identity.

The nazis and commies made a lot of good art that showed contempt and hate.

Actually i was alluding to the point that people identify themselves into these groups. As he is 18 those 3 are probably the most relevant, but it could be applied to middle class soccer moms Vs single mothers or whatever. By no means saying someone is better or worse than the artist- just that the artist does not identify with any group by illustrating said groups.

No, they didn't.

There's a difference between "technically accomplished" and "great." Leni Riefenstahl's work is definitely in the former.

A less politically charged example- and therefore much easier to talk about clearly- of "technically accomplshed but not great" art would be (for instance, in photography) th work of Phillip Lorca diCorcia. All of his work is extremely well-done and often innovative, but what do they *say*? Not much. At most they create a mood, but without any substance behind the mood.

I strongly disagree with you. The soviets had some great artists, including photographers and their work was great, even if you don't like the politics. I think such absolutes as that earlier statement rarely ever work in reality.

The argument wasn't whether or not there were great soviet artist. It was whether or not there were great soviet artists whose art was all about contempt and hate.

Exactly. The point is that great art is motivated by a sympathy for the human condition and our strivings in the world. Not... and this is the exact nadir that's coming to mind at the moment... that shitty-ass rap song that was everywhere last year of that guy ranting about how he was "hot" and "fly" and the listener was not. Or why Jews/Germans/Japanese/Americans/Britons/Frenchmen/Capitalists/Communists/Chavs/Emokids/etc. are evil pigfucking bastards that deserve to die slow and painful deaths while their mother gets Alzheimers and is raped by a porpoise/the greatest people on earth who are destined to rule over everybody else/whatever.

Now now, that's a lot of pseudointellectual bullshit for one post, don't over-exert yourself!

You have to write an essay to get into photography school?

Geez, in Australia if you can pay the 15k tuition fee and present a half assed folio on a scrap of toilet paper you're in
>> eku !8cibvLQ11s

Reason why that is possible, might be free education. At least in Finland you don't have to pay anything to get in universities. You just need to be better than most of the other applicants.
But, I'm not sure if this is the case in Brits.
Yeah, free education for everyone, for everything! (Free also includes getting money from the government to pay your living while studying.)

Photography schools here are classed more as vocational studies (or TAFE) and aren't applicable to commonwealth funding (HECS) which is why the fee is so important, moreso than the folio

in the brits them getting your money is more important than them getting people who actually deserve to be on the course, especially if its an expensive course. i'm on concept design, animation and 3d modelling and they just got 2 new buildings packed with hundreds of dual widescreen, quad core 8GB RAM machines. Those beasts dont pay for themselves, so unsurprisingly half of the people on my course can barely hold a pencil.

Honestly I'm not worried about skill level - If I'm not good enough I'm not good enough, no point in worrying over that. It was more the series of questions I wanted to vent about.

If you can't even do this assignment on your own (Which is shiteasy btw, compared to stuff you'll get), then I suggest you go to another study. Srsly. This post proves you cannot do it.

OP here, nevermind I figured it out.
