Sorry /p/ to make another recommendation thread but...
Currently I have been using my on camera flash, well, as a flash; but I am thinking of buying a speed light for Christmas. The problem is that I do not know anything about speed lights. I have a Nikon D80 and I was looking at the SB-400 and I was wondering what is /p/'s experience with it. Should I buy it, save and by the SB-600, or buy something else?

Save and buy the SB-600 as then you can bounce the flash. The SB-400 is better than the pop-up, but you'd be better spending a little more to get a much better flash that allows for more versatility.

SB400 would be fine for what 99% of people would use it for. If you don't know why you need something else, you probably don't.

The SB400 has bounce, it just doesn't look like it. No tilt, but that's not a very big deal.

Non twisting flashes are going to get replaced fairly soon, its generally worth the cash to get a more powerful one with full freedom. This is more important if you do portrait style (ie rotated camera) because you will want to angle the flash a lot more then.

I agree. There's really no reason to make them now that everything has a pop-up except bodies meant for people who ought to a better one.

I'd save and by the SB-600 or SB-800.
I bought the SB-600 and I kinda regret I didn't buy the SB-800 instead, because it would have given me more options when using more than one flash, because the D70's lack of controlling different flashes with different settings wirelessly.

op here, okay, I'll save for the sb-600 or 800.
The question is, what do you recommend, the sb600 or sb800 ?

SB-600 will cover virtually everything you could think of doing with an external flash, However if you are looking for a SECOND flash, I would recommend the SB-800, It has a lot more commander options than the D80 body, and the Repeating strobe is fun to mess around with once in a while.

OP here, no, this will be my first speed light, thanks for the info. Most likely I'll get the sb-600. Since I am new to speedlights, do you have any places where I can learn how to figure out exposure and etc ?

While you're saving up, drop ~5-40bux on a vintage speedlight (sb15/16/20/26/28/28dx/80dx) and enjoy quality thyristor flashing AT A FRACTION OF T3H PRICE
TTL is nice but you need it like internet needs another camwhore

...and if you're going to study from the strobist school of learnins he doesn't suggest TTL anyway. :P
