Hey /p/, here's the next picture in my 'series' of manipulating lighting to teach myself some shit...

so far it looks like I've got a one-a-day thing going, but don't doubt that I'll fuck it up soon...

again, any comments/critique greatly welcome and quite requested...

thanks!

sorry, this EXIF data is incorrect.

this is an HDR - I used 3 exposures, one normal exposure, and one 2 stops each end... Used aperture priority and a bracket - exposure time was something like 1/2500 for lowest, then 1/640, and 1/160... auto focus.. that's all I can think to mention..

but i do want to know how you did this, it's quite nice

Looks like shit.

I'm guessing it's a piece of quartz or ice that was lit from below, and also lit from above with what looks like a ring of christmas lights.

You need to invest in a better tripod if you're going to do close-up HDR like this. This would be a lot better if it wasn't so blurry.

i don't think it's ice, unless your water totally sucks ass. it looks like wax, or quartz.

definitely lit from behind. what's that straight line at the bottom from? there looks to be a black sheet, around the light, which is creating those ripples in the bg.

it was shot pretty fast though - the DOF was more the problem than a tripod I think... would you rather have the drops more in focus? the rock is actually in good focus, thats just how it looks :D...

ah there comes another problem of mine...

my hands reflected in the glass and showed up in the shot.. I had to hold my hands above (nearer the top, in terms of the picture) for it to not show up... for some reason, the reflections weren't nearly as strong at the top as they were at the bottom.. If I had leaned the tripod it would've showed up.

but I didn't think to lean to the tripod with the back leg extended, thanks! (I guess I didnt think of it because it wouldn't balance well on its own or something, but its much better than random handheld)...

hey what about this...

Since the rock lacks distinct features.. I could focus on the drops as opposed to the rock. In this case it would look like everything is in better focus..

I may re-shoot this tonight...

if you don't have any light coming from above, you shouldn't have a problem with reflections. just light it from behind.

you could either do a composite, or you can use the tripod, and shoot at a smaller aperture.

if you still have problems with reflections, get urself a circular polarizer.

there are reflections though, dunno why.. maybe light from floor onto ceiling and back....

I suppose I should anyway.
