fine here we go people ... SPOILERS...

1.create a concept and collect all appropriate props and costumes.

2. build a set/dress your set.

3. Do a rough light for what you're shooting.

4. Get all the talent in and finish lighting, making sure that (in the best situation) there is nothing all the way at each end of the histogram, though getting it aas far as possible.

5. Have fun shooting it.

6. import into aperture and tweek your levels and colors to taste, mostly just exposure and contrast ranges.

7. Import it into photoshop, and go to the actions folder "imps" to the action sequence I created called "style" then press play.

8. ???????

scott i now its your thing but the over use of this post processing technique you are implementing is killing your work. ultimately the post work isnt going to make these photos better.

i remember some stuff you showed us very early on and personally i found it more accomplished. its like your now stuck in this one phase and its limiting you more than you think.
>> pskaught
>>102302
hey man, this is all for this calendar. Don't think this is where I stop. I may take some of these steps and refine them, but I should let everyone know this is the infancy of my (hopeful) career in photography.

The post process is just to make up for the fact that the 5D may be impressive but it is still an amature camera and whatever I can do to make it seem flashier the better. That, and I'm trying to sell myself right now, might as well catch their eye with something shiny.

This is just the beginning. No one should take these three portraits seriously, it was a $5 jpg photobooth.

yah i agree. wasnt having a bitch, i was just worried you were pigeoning yourself in one hole.not necessarily one style but a massive reliance on shopping to get a recognizable look. the photos work together as a theme without the post process and would have maybe stood out more without it.

this may be a more "artistic" question but doesn't it bum you out a bit that ppl are generally more interested in HOW you did the photos than the photos them self? Sort of like "fuck the content and any effort you put into these being a coherent, thematic series" just explain this and that ...etc
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>102308
>ppl are generally more interested in HOW you did the photos than the photos them self
Well, the "how do you get that look" question is the one that's worth discussing. The nontechnical details are self evident. I.e., how does he get such great pictures? Obvious: He's extremely talented and creative. We can't really ask how to become extremely talented and creative, because talent and creativity doesn't work that way. So we ask how to make our pictures look like his visually.
>> Anonymous
>>102315

i disagree. i think a lot of creativity happens through osmosis, group discussion. it's sort of a sum-of-the-parts thing. it's just easier to discuss gear and technique than it is to discuss theory, ideas and inspiration for the uninitiated.

that's what's so disappointing about photo forums. here we are, given the most radical and amazing form of free exchange of ideas and theory, and we spend all of our time bitching about how gay the nikon d40 is.
>> pskaught
>>102357
at least its not a sony...

>> Anonymous
>>102359

how you make your ideas all good and stuff and why we should talk more about that because it really do help make you see different.
>> Anonymous
>>102305
Knowing pskaught's preferences, I imagine he's comparing it to a digital Hasselblad.

But on that note, pskaught, if you're so heavily set on having the best quality, why not go for a view camera? Use the 5D like a Polaroid back, and just expose the final one on the sheet film?

>>102357

Osmosis isn't "oh hey gaiz this is how I do this."

You can't teach talent, or at least the type that distinguishes a pskaught from others.

The way I see it, there's three types of talent:

1. Technical ability to make it not shit. Some arts (e.g. painting) require some innate ability; others, like writing (grammar) and photography (focus, exposure, etc.) can be learned by anyone.

2. A strong aesthetic sense. This is innate, but many people have it. Stock photographers even have it, for fuck's sake. A sense for what looks good and what doesn't. Great critics of an art usually have this to the exclusion of the other types... Harold Bloom, for instance, is a titan of literary criticism, but the one novel he wrote himself was an absolute catastrophe, by his own admission.

3. Genuine talent. A perceptiveness into things, a genuine sympathy and understanding for the human condition, a sharp but not cruel sense of irony, and an ability to use the first two to draw these feelings into form.

The first can be taught and developed, the second can be cultivated, the third comes from some place even the Shakespeares and Rembrandts can only speak on indirectly.

Some more talk on /p/ about aesthetics and theories of them would be nice, but no matter how much you immersed yourself in that, lacking the third, you'd be at best a Harold Bloom and not an inch closer to being a Shakespeare.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>102376
>>why not go for a view camera?
speaking of that, i've actually been looking at 4x5 view camera's lately, i've got my eye set on a Shenhao HZX45-IIA including Rodenstock APO-Sironar-N 150mm f/5.6 lens and some other things like plates for about US$1300, but thats "foreigner" price, so i plan to buy direct ^_^
>> Anonymous
>>102376

it's hard for me to argue with you, since we're both basically saying more theory, less geary. having said that, whatever follows isn't just me playing devil's advocate. i agree with a lot of what you say, except that genuine talent can't be taught.

on the contrary, i believe that genuine talent is something that has to be developed through interaction with mentors and peers and rivals. the exceptional genius working in total isolation is so rare as to be almost a total myth. Shakespeare worked in a fertile literary period, in a very competitive part of London. in photography, ansel adams and ed weston founded f/64. HCB, Robert Capa and others founded Magnum. bernd and hilla becher had probably the most fabulously successful master class in photo history at the kunstakademie dusseldorf.

by aligning themselves with similar-minded peers, they not only refined their own artistic ideologies, they established specific schools that later artists would use as touchstones for their own styles and taste.

but i'm getting long-winded, especially when i agree with so much of what you say. so, tl;dr: you can teach talent, which is why you go to college in the first place.

You all seem to think it's a lot harder than it really is. Just look closely at the pic:

1. The colors are sort of subdued and deep, with sharp shadows. That can all be done with levels, curves, and saturation, especially if starting with a RAW.
2. You can see every little bump and pore on the people's faces. That's an assload of unsharp-mask.

The rest is pretty much just lighting. And, of course, the setting up of the scene, which is the really hard bit.

No blended layers. No smart objects. In fact, I did it in GIMP rather than Photoshop because I'm a linuxfag.

Well that's a little cynical. And in my experience, most of the photography on here is of the "Boring landscapes" and "Crap on my desk" varieties. We only dig on pskaught's style because he's one of the few good photographers on here.
>> Anonymous
>>102489

Pskaught has such a definitive style. Alot is post processing, which is appropriate. Developing negatives creatively was half of photography anyway.

I dig Pskaught's style because its good, and so very unique. Partially for these wild compositions with all this detail (and breaking rules of composition), as well as the post processing that brings that detail out.

Then there are the bizarre expressions, poses set ups. I like as much what Pskaught shoots as what he chooses to show... they all have that common factor. A unique aesthetic I like alot.

Pskaught could make the same images he does now with a cheap point and shoot... so cameras not an issue.

Even if we knew how Pskaught was doing his post processing, it wouldn't come out the same. I get the feeling that its not exactly cookie cutter... rather its a method of getting a desited effect, rather than desiring a particular method, regardless of effect.

And as for post processing being a) for fags, or b) somehow less accomplished, well... no one gives a fuck what the rest of you people shoot... do they? Despite your feelings about post processing? No, they don't. You'd think they'd respect your discipline, by refusing to make your photos worth looking at via photoshop, but they don't. You'd think they'd understand your mundane scenes and mediocre exposures were worth looking at for their purity... "This is stock Canon XTi auto-white balancing and pure second-generation jpeg processing, with no additives or preservatives." No. You are all horribly wrong, and stupid as well.

So fuck off. Your opinions count for shit. Got calendar pre-orders? No? Fuck off.

everyone's post process was "wrong", but still works just as well, I'm sure.

>Shakespeare worked in a fertile literary period, in a very competitive part of London

And yet the only other Elizabethean playwrights and poets whose work has lasted, out of the hundreds or thousands of ones dicking around London, are Jonson and Donne, and a few others to lesser extents (Marlowe, Nashe, etc.). All of these forgotten-and-not-missed poets were in the same basic milleu, and almost all of them would've adopted the style of one of these luminaries and probably done it at least tolerably well. But they're gone, existing not in the human conciousness but only in rare manuscripts tucked in the least illustrious corners of illustrious libraries and dissertations. Why? Because their works lack that essential spark that is the true talent of an artist. Anyone can imitate or learn a style and technique, but those are just vessels to put art in, not art itself. They're worth learning and practicing and discussing, but it all comes to jack shit without some of that third type of talent I mentioned. It's like those dipshits who calculate exactly when the light will be identical to the light in one of Ansel Adams's photograph and haul out the same spot and basically masturbate themselves with their (diminuitive) lensboards.

Let's not forget Vincent. His panoramas are awesome.

I think we have a decent amount of talent here, but there are rarely people who are willing to suck it up and actually post their work... either through fear of being ripped to shreds by the hordes of /p/ or whatever else.

Aside from the tripfags, i'm sure there are plenty of anon with talent. But i suppose a name or tripcode is almost necessary so we can associate a name with a style.

The nature of /p/ and its rules make it difficult for anon to thrive.

I doubt all this "talent/creativy/whatever" can't be learned. I say it is as much learnable than any other skill.
Just because some people are talented/creative/whatever and some people aren't, doesn't mean the latter ones couldn't became talented/creative/whatever. It just needs some serious work (and some art study).
Or at least that's what I'm thinking right now.

Those who are naturally creative/talented will tell you that it can't be learned.

Except talent and creativity are traits, not skills.

There's stuff you can do to encourage them, but it'd be like trying to make Adolf Hitler into Albert Schweitzer, or vice versa.

Well, then I say, you don't need to be talented/creative/whatever to create masterpieces. Only has enough knowledge to choose composition, colors, etc. which pleases the viewers the most.

You're right, anyone can learn to make good-looking photographs or pleasing photographs, or entertaining novels, or catchy music. But that doesn't mean it's genuinely good. There's a hell of of a lot more going on with Cartier-Bresson, Kerouac, or Beethoven than looking good, being entertaining, or being catchy.

Heres a hint /p/. Go off and make your own style instead of trying to copy someone else.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>102932

Whilst i agree, it simplifies another point. It's about being influenced by someone else and then gaining your own style as a result.

I don't think any would compltely copy a lighting setup or photoshop actions. Even when they do, it'll be done differently enough to be considered that person's own style... if not as first then eventually.

Learning other peoples styles allows you to take bits and pieces from other people and form your own style. I'm a musician, not a photographer, but I can tell you that anyone who claims to not have learned by copying other people is lying. Where'd you learn that Fmaj7, asshole?

What are you? New?

It's just ac with his usual witticisms and well-timed critique, you douche.

Personally, I believe that what ac, well Mr. ac if I may, was trying to convey with this particular comment is a sense of genital discomfort created by the image under discussion.

Perhaps this may be related to kidney stones brought on by a genetic predisposition to them or too much coffee consumed while pouring over the recent submissions on /p / and allowing us the benefit of his encyclopedic knowledge and superior and incisive critique style.

In an era of ineffective and sorely lacking fluff that accomplishes little, I believe that this lone comment, "Penis", effectively conveys a variety of mental imagery generally associated with the swallowing of healthy man sausage and baby batter.

As a matter of fact, it is my most sincere belief that the words as written here should be burned into the surface of the Earth in such size (and illuminated at night) so that they are visible from space.

This way, any visiting civilization will be well and truly acquainted and awestruck by the purest form of genius residing on this world.

That is until they see /b/ and then you'll be glad I spent all that time playing 'Missile Commander' as a young lad. So please, lay off a bit or ac may retire and we'll all wind up finding out what happens when the third planet from the sun is invaded by Extraterrestrial Fuck Creatures from the Goat Galaxy.
