if you're just starting out, any entry level dSLR of either canon (canon 400D/xTI) or nikon (nikon d40?). be warned though that the entry level Nikons don't have an autofocus motor and most lenses will have to be manually focused.

as to which brand to buy. Whichever one feels best in your hands, check for menu layouts, actual button layouts, even the sound of the shutter if you're picky. go to a store and fondle both.

It's fucking amazing for high-speed shooting. If that's not your thing, get a cheap DSLR for less.
