Some say Pentax K100D.

I don't say either way; I've never shot with either.

Depends on budget, just read up on the lenses, The Body isn't as important.

Look at the price of the 80-200 or af-s Or a 300mm af-s f2.8 For Nikon... those are good car / bike racing focal lengths. then pick up a Tc14e teleconvertor and you will be able to get as fast a shutter speed as you need for any daytime shots.

You will spend more on lenses than you will a body

I'd say go with the Nikon. I only say that because I've been shooting with Nikon's for as long as I've been holding a camera and I've never had problems with them whatsoever. If you take care of a D40, the only thing you'll ever find yourself replacing are lenses.

$600 for the cam, At LEAST another $800 for a single good Track lens.
Basically you pay for what you get.

My advice to you, Buy a Used D50 or D70s and a Used 80-200 AF-d, Total cost will only be like $1000. And you will have great racing pics (if you can figure out how to use the cam)
