hey /p/,

i want to go into photography and thinking of buying a good camera for street photography. im thinking about a nice small, maybe pocketable, rugged camera that will survive everyday usage. i dont want to use DSLRs as they are too bulky. my old digital camera feels light and cheap and the best thing i currently have is a camera phone.

any suggestions?

ps. i have a lot of pictures and i want to digitize it. do i just scan them or are there other ways?

dont have a pic so here is an epic art

Any compact or bridge camera that supports raw will do fine for this. Canon Powershot G-series, Panasonic FZ8, FZ18, LX2, LC1, anything Ricoh (although some have impractically long raw write times), and I understand Fuji makes some good models towards this end, but I'm not familiar with them.

Unless you've got ~$6000+ for an M8 and a 35 or 28mm lens.

somehow, i dont like the look and feel of the canon powershot and the like. it feels light and cheap. other alternatives?

Though I've never held any of them, I understand the Ricohs and the Panasonic DMC-LC1 all have a more "pro" build to them.

Incidentally, I dropped my my PowerShot A95 from about 3 feet onto concrete today. It bounced. Once I popped the shutter button back into place, it seems to work fine (though the CF slot cover cracked a bit, but nothing that a little crazy glue won't fix).

This is the second time it's survived a bad drop. First time gave it a big dent on the top panel 'cause it hit a rock.

So, PowerShots aren't as flimsy as they might feel.

A Powershot is pretty much going to be the best camera to suit your needs.
It's going to be a camera that can take you from beginners pictures, like using the automatic settings, to more advanced things, like playing with advanced settings to get different feels from your pictures. Then again this is kinda my opinion, and I've sold many of them.

Just cause they seem kinda bulky doesn't make them bad, they certainly take great pictures :P
