hey /p/, I'm taking a trip to Africa this summer and it'll be for two weeks. And because we're safariing there won't be any outlets to charge my battery for my D80. Should I buy another battery or should I not bother with it? I'm bringing my film camera too which runs on photo batteries so that'll be fine.

tl;dr: Should I buy an extra battery pack for my two week trip?

yes

Yes, and take charger with you just in case. If you happen to see electric socket anywhere run for it and charge you batteries.

Also check what kinds of sockets and voltages africa has so you can buy converter from the airport if you need one.

Buy a couple extra batteries. You should always have spares. I get mine at sterlingtek.com. They have cheap knock-offs that are high quality.

third party (knockoff) batteries are ahuge cause of camera malfunctions and other unexplainable issues with camera's.
If the battery is a single point of failure, buy a legit first party battery..

I have a third party charger for may camera with a cigarette lighter plug, something like this may be an option, if the you can find out if the vehicle has cigarette lighters. But I'd say bring at least three batteries with you.

Everyone I know uses these third party batteries with no known issues. But if you like spending $50 on a $12 battery go ahead.

ahh yes the grandmaster of experience speaks, everyone listen to him because he knows EVERYONE and they NEVER have problems with cheap batteries.

My friend just bought an off brand battery for her D80 and the thing wont even fit (and yes it was for the D80)

I don't get this. Could third party batteries damage my camera permanently?
>> Anonymous
>>146899
yes, they are the riskiest in terms of overheating, leaking, exploding or catching on fire.
And theres a much higher chance of your camera not working properly because the battery does not give as consistant or accurate power that the first party batteries are meant for.

do it just in case, you don't wanna travel all the way to africa and find out the batter is dead, or you use it up the first week or something! think about it

Brandwhore fearmonger. That shit very rarely happens. I bet you're one of those types who won't buy Sigma or Tamron lenses because they might brick your camera right?

most of my lenses are Sigma actually, one tamron, and i've owned a few tokina's.

Better take those back and get some first party lenses.

True we have these at the Canadian Tire stores here. Bit pricy though.
