Dear /p/,

I would consider myself a loyal user of Canon, until this week. I first was introduced to the Nikon D3 by a friend of mine, and it was a good first encounter. I currently own Canon equipment (20D, 350D, 70-200 F/2.9, 550EX and some other cheap lenses). I am a sports photographer (events mostly) and need high FPS and good ISO range. I have been looking at profession DSLR's for a while now, and have broken it down to either the EOS 1D Mark III or switch and get the D3. Basically my question is, should I sell all my Canon equipment (which I do not have much of) and switch to Nikon?

Which camera is a better buy in your opinion, and which brand name carries itself more in your opinion?

I personally bought the Canon because it was cheaper when I bought it.

Sincerely,
Confused Sports Junkie.

the fact that you are asking this question in /p/ cements me in my mind that you are no doubt a troll.

The nikon vs canon threads get really boring. So do us all a favour and GTFO.

Since none of us here have any knowledge about cameras or anything, and can plainly see this is a opinion based thread. OP is not looking for a Nikon vs Canon thread, you are just looking for the means of starting one.

1. sell the camera gear
2. forget the D3
3. Get that girl

D3 is undoubtedly the reigning high ISO champ, but whether or not it's worth switching systems is up to you. I'm inclined to say switch, because I believe in Nikon as a simply better tool for the job, but you're already invested in Canon, and it'd be much easier for you to just get a MkIII body, which is no slouch (though I hear it still has some autofocus issues).

Post some sports photos!

Hmm, this is a tough one as Nikon cameras are superior, but Canon's specialty lenses are what make it a favourite in the sports photography world.

It really comes down to budget....how much are you willing to spend? Do your existing lenses work on the full frame 1D Mark III?

Okay, hold on. Nikon and Canon's high-end sports telephotos are almost identical. Canon's are slightly cheaper. They both have excellent 70-200 f/2.8 VR/IS lenses. They both have awesome 300 f/2.8 VR/IS and 400 f/2.8 VR/IS lenses. They both have awesome teleconverters. For all practical purposes, their high-end lens lineups are identical.

The 1DMk3 is a 1.3x crop, not full-frame. The 1DsMk3 is full-frame.

I would say the supertele playing field has evened out with Nikon's introduction of the VR superteles. Canon just released their version of the 200/2VR, so even the short teles for both companies are matched right up. The only exotic tele that Canon has but Nikon doesn't is the new 800mm, but that's a lens rarely purchased by private shooters anyway.

Yeah, only Audobon faggots need those crazy telephotos.
