Worth the few grand?

if you know how to use it and will make money off of it that will quickly or slowly but surely gain back in profit, yes.

Damn it I want one now. Yes, yes, I'm a shit photographer that only wants to be an arrogant prick with it. But at least now I have a goal.

Anyways, what makes it such a good camera?

If you have to ask....

>what can you tell me about Leicas?

It's mostly just brand faggotry. The leica glass is nice, but you could just buy a cheaper alternative that has a leica mount.

Only get it if you're the kind of person who would buy a hummer just so people would see you driving it.

The ergonomics; it's considered one of the greatest designs of anything.

The build quality, combination quality and selection of lenses available, and probably quietest focal plane shutter you'll find don't hurt, either.

Doesn't have to be a few grand; you can get an M3 or M2 (haven't looked into the others) on eBay for a few hundred, lens for a little more. Very, very little more if you go for a cheap Russian ripoff, although their internal mechanisms are done a little differently, so the focus gets off a bit, but it doesn't matter except wide open.

The only "good" leicas are the film ones, the M8 is a over priced peice of shit
Oh yeah, in before "LEICA GLOW!!!!1111"

lol, Minox digital Leica. I saw one of those in UO once.

Leica is basically a prestige brand, the lenses are godly, and the cameras are great of course, but they're not totally necessary to own if you just want to use Leica glass. If you want the glass, and are actually interested in using it, a Voigtlander M39 (Bessa R) or M (Bessa R2 and up) body are more affordable, just as bright, and equally usable (or more, less worrying about damaging it :P)

I you are even casual considering buying a Leica (especially older model), go rent and borrow one to see if it's for you. As much as I like the results other people get with Leicas, I HATED using them. I would never own one.
The real early ones with screw mount I especially hate

Heh, I wouldn't mind a Leica if it was given to me for free.

Pro-tip: That is not a leica.

I know, but to OP it might not be a very noticable statement.

Cosina (that is, Voightlander) makes decent glass, too, by all accounts, so you could get an M-mount body and lens new for less than $1000 and start buying Summiluxes or whatever when the budget allows.

I shoot exclusively on Leicas. One thing you may want to keep in mind is expense. For the price you may be better off with a Canon rig depending on your shooting style. My style means i can get away with shooting on an old Leica SLR rig with older glass. Most people nowadays would need a IS lens or a robust digital rig.

One thing I *can* say is that Leicas are built to withstand a war. I have owned 5 so far (Two SL's, and SL2, a II(f), and my piece d'resistance - an SL MOT).

But honestly I would advise the average/new photographer to go Canon.

the Zeiss Ikon ZM is just as good and cheaper

Are you looking for a rangefinder or an SLR? I posted earlier but here is an addition...

For Rangefinder: Mechanically nothing comes close to any Leica. But you *pay* for it. Out the nose. A Voight can mount M lenses (rangefinder) so you get the Leica glass without the Leica body cost. This is a good compromise that many many people use. Spend the money on the lens - you can but 5 new Voights for a used M.

For SLRs it gets more complicated but Leica has never made a modern SLR with all the features a Canon or Nikon has. Leica SLR glass for example is *not* autofocus and the only IS goes on a 4/3rds body.

If you like old manual SLRs the Leicaflex series is the way to go. Nothing comes close to it. But some people prefer the Nikon F bodies for various (valid) reasons.

Summary: If you have the cash go all-Leica. For a cheaper rangefinder solution go Voight body with Leica glass. Or go old Zeiss stuff as someone mentioned before. Both are cheaper routes.
SLRs it -really- depends. Fully manual? Leicaflex. More modern? Canon or Nikon. Some of you Leica folks like the R8/R9 -and that is a fine camera- but I doubt anyone is going to pony up the 10k+ for their larger zoom lenses when you can get an autofocus, IS Canon setup for so much less.

no New zeiss ZM is just as good as a m7. only the m7 is heavier thats all.

Wouldnt the sony bodies also have IS, although ive never looked for a mount adaptor for Dynax.

That and there are "CZ" lenses on the mount already however.

Leica SLRS are shit. They were practically stillborn.

The R series was questionable. The R8 and R9 are pretty decent. The Leicaflex series is legendary - and if you've ever used one you'd know why. I've never come across a more reliable, stout, and just overall amazing SLR. I shoot full manual and sans light meter - some people don't. so the Leicaflex series suits me well.

If you've never used one you have no place talking about them, however.

On the 8th day GOD created the Leica.

that is all.
>> OP
Learned some things, thanks guys. For now I guess I'll just keep collecting old slrs from my local pawnshop.
