No, rule of thirds is a good technique as long you know when to use and not use it. Also rule of thirds gives you good starting point when you're starting to compose a shot, even if you don't end up using it.

funny thing was when I first read about that, I looked at my old shots and noticed I've been unconsciousnessly applying this rule most of the time anyways

I have absolutely no principles except instinct in my photography. I am still producing good shots, but I would like to at least have a grounding in the basic 'rules'... Is there a site with a brief rundown of the popular ones?

Fibonacci = wtf, you almost won't find that repeating in anything EXCEPT for flora shots.

But Golden Rectangle for the win.
Now that I've read up on it. I always assumed it was just a repeating 3rds rule, as I applied it (the third of a third line)

there are different rules for different type of shots. google around for rules of photography or something relevant.

but imho, the most important rule is that rules are meant to be broken.

"Rules for photography". I've never heard such shit before. Photography and art in generel is NOT a subject to execute rules and guidelines. It's about feel free to express in different ways, and if someone takes photos while learning shit from books and photography classes, it is not a way of expression, it's just composing.
