Hey /p/. Immigrant from /k/ here with a question. I have a friend who has decided to jump into photography with both feet. He isn't the brightest guy in the world, nor is he the most skillful at his new hobby yet, but he makes up for both with enthusiasm.

He wants a digital camera. He is trying to decide between a Canon EOS 400D Rebel XTi and a Nikon D40. Which of these would you recommend and why? Or would you recommend he ditch both for something else in $500 price range?

In return, I give you an A10 dropping flares.

I am sure you would find at least 4 threads talking about rebel vs d40 on the board if you looked carefully

The mods here will delete that even though it is cool, I bet.

Does he really need or want a DSLR? Maybe he'd be happier with a more compact (and cheaper) solution? Some of the "bridge" style cameras might be all that he needs. Any idea what he is currently using?

Out of those two I'd suggest the Canon model as it allows more control and lens options. It is a a very nice camera.

Is he willing to consider old or second hand models? Has he budgeted for the lenses? The lenses can cost more than the camera depending on what you choose and the camera isn't much good without at least one.

Might be best for him tot try out the cameras in a shop and get a feel for them. Pick one that he feels comfortable with and has a range of lenses and accessories that look appealing to him as once you've bought into the system you are sort of tied into it by the investment.

>Does he really need or want a DSLR?

Need? No. Good god no. I'm a rank amateur, and by rank I mean "I stink at this." The words "histogram", "composition", "noise" and "filters" got me blank stares.

Want? Yes. DSLRs look more professional. They're more expensive, therefore they have to be better! (Having this man as a coworker and sometimes supervisor is a truly unique experience. Think Pointy-Haired Boss.)

>Maybe he'd be happier with a more compact (and cheaper) solution?

Really, all he needs is the cheapest thing he can pick up at Best Buy with decent stabilization and a good light meter while he figures out how to take a picture that doesn't look like it came out of a disposable Kodak.

Having failed to persuade him to get that, or to spend enough money to get himself a quality DSLR camera, I'm trying to figure out which way to head in this nadir of the price/performance curve.

>Any idea what he is currently using?

This is his first digital camera. His bank account balance seems to be too big, therefore he must do something that looks cool. The Canon comes with an 18-55mm lens. Based on that and your recommendation, I'll tell him to stick with the Rebel.

Might as well tell him to go all out and get the 40D with 17-85 IS kit.

Costs quite a bit more but he will feel like a big man with it. And while the 17-85 is not the best lens around, it's got better range and usability than the standard 18-55 kit.

The D40 is going to be more user-friendly, but the XTi is going to give him more room to grow (if he ever decided to get educated). I'd lean towards the D40.

He should go with the D40 and the 18-200mm VR. Now that may not be the best or the last lens he'll ever need but it may just be the one he uses the most.

It has to be a flare or maybe chaff, would make sense on a slow moving, low flying aircraft. Take a look at the other hardpoint on the other wing, I'm guessing the four black squares are it.

You learn not to be skeptical about random /k/rauts when you see the clip/magazine mistake a few times.

He needs a Hasselblad. Anything else is only suitable as a child's toy.
