Advice /p/? Anonymous
I have a real question for you /p/, Am sure am going to be flamed to hell or called a troll for this but I need help.

How do i go about getting into the business?

I am a student for another subject but realized i made the wrong choice, i have no passion for 3d modeling anymore... I want to go the photography route. I tried to apply for a university course, but with no previous education of any relevance to photography, I failed application.

My first thought was "fuck them!", they didn't even give me a interview to show a portfolio, yet they decided I wasn't worthy due to not wasting my time in college on it? fuck them!

How can I go about getting into the business without all this education bollocks? Am prepared to put in the effort, study in my own time, anything. And that will be a must anyway, so far everything i know is from trial and error, my technical side is VERY lacking.

Britfag btw....

pic unrelated.. its one of my attempts to take a photo :P

But if there is honestly no other good way to go about this it seems i dont have much choice

1) Outside of weddings and photographs of sandwiches/products, the photography industry is VERY small.

2) Photography isn't as "easy" as you probably think it is.

3) Take some night courses at your local adult college or equivalent to build a portfolio to submit to an art school.

Currently a photography major here, I'm considering switching my major to something else that, while is still art related, doesn't have freelancing involved- I want to not worry about eating from one week to the next, thanks.

I'm going to minor in photography though and make it my hobby :) So...

I guess you should keep trying to get into courses, but be aware that some people succeed being self-taught. Take lots of photos and get your work out there. University will help with lighting, job connections, compositions and will lend you their equipment if they are good-- but there are lots of different paths I guess to succeed.

Practice taking pictures of products.
There are ALWAYS product photography gigs out there.
Now that everything is on the web everybody needs folks to take picture of the shit they're trying to sell.

They key is getting an easy but high-paying job doing something like photographing seafood or some such. Something that only really takes a few hours per job and is technically easy but that you can charge hundreds for (£300 per hour rates aren't unheard of). Then you have all the time and resources to spend on photographing the things you actually want to.

It's the same with any creative hobby or job really. Get a stable boring job set up to provide, do your arty fun stuff in your free time because nobody is going to pay you to do it.

1.Learn to take decent pictures
2.Learn to network and market yourself
3.Learn to take actually good pictures
4. ???
5. Profit!

And then just a random thing. Unless you already have, you may want to pick up some design-related skills to go with photography.
