CHDK ??? Anonymous
Anyone used CHDK firmware on a PowerShot?

Have any pics taken with any the special features?

Can it brick your camera?

Is it kool?

about as cool as overclocking is these days.....ie not at all.

It's nothing like overclocking a PC and barely like putting custom firmware on your PSP and I don't use it for the "kool" or "rebel" factor.

It's incredibly useful if you ask me. The features that stand out the most are taking shots in RAW and scripting. It makes P&S's almost like bridge cameras and bridge cameras almost like SLR's minus the obvious physical differences and sensor and lens quality.

It's also all software so there's no risk of bricking. If it fucks up, just remove batteries and restart camera.

I've used it, but I don't normally bother with it. If you need the extra features, use it. If you don't, don't.

is right too. I don't autoboot it and I only switch into it when it's really necessary. I leave it off when taking shots of friends and stuff but turn it on if I want to take a serious photo with RAW or with some manual override which isn't that often but it's still great to have on the card just in case. Only a few kb anyway.

How much more space do the RAW shots take up on the card? I'm using a A720IS, would the quality be that much different using RAW on some cheap cam like this be worth the extra MB used?

Also, are these standard format RAW that you can open and edit with Photoshop?

Yes. Take they shit loads of more space than your current pictures are.
My A710IS pictures are about 2.5Mb and in RAW is about 7.1Mb (basically the amount your mega-pixel is or close to).

You need a plugin to process RAWs (basically the same as for the Canon DSLR).

Canon A550 user here. 7mp

RAWs are about thrice or 4 times the size of my jpegs. I can fit about 70 in my 1GB SD Card. What I absolutely hate about them though is that I can't delete them in the gallery. I have to enable the file browser and delete it manually. I only really use RAW when I'm serious about taking a shot that requires steadying or setting up for, not just any plain snapshot. There are programs out there that can easily convert a folder full of RAWs into DNGs and even carry the EXIF over. Best one I've used is DNG4PS. The DNGs can then be opened up easily in PhotoShop and tweaked.

ROFL

This thread is like, POWERSHOT USERS UNITE!, almost like Canon Talk on DPReview.

That's awesome logic. My Honda Civic is the same as Porsche 911 minus the obvious physical differences and engine and everything else.

Well yeah considering cars don't run software. If both cars had identical computers but only the Porsche had GPS, autodrive, path mapping, etc which can get you from A to B with much less hassle whereas the Civic can also get you from A to B but with a bit of extra work. If I somehow port the software in the Porsche into the Civic, I can say that both cars are the same in getting me to from A to B easily minus the obvious physical differences that the Porsche can get me there faster just like how a bridge camera has less noise than a compact at ISO 800 but I can now bracket and use full manual controls with both.

>just like how a bridge camera has less noise than a compact at ISO 800
Well that's just not true.

Bridge cameras' main selling point tends to be their ZOMFGHUGE zoom range. They get this zoom range in part by having ZOMFGTINY sensors. I.e., a bridge camera will generally have equal or *more* noise at a given ISO than a compact in the same camera line.

The point we're trying to make is that the addition of RAW is the only real SLR-like feature that CHDK adds, and that's really not getting you perceptibly closer to a DSLR.

Wow, are you serious? Someone has never watched Fast and Furious.

Not that it's a movie where one should learn about cars but I'm quite sure they've mentioned ECUs in it.

Guess what the fucking computer would be on cameras? Image processor and sensor.

No amount of "features" you unlock will help you. HO HO I can take RAWs and process them myself! Big whoop.

Your "computer" only gets you so far. It's like modding a Civic engine. You'll be slightly better than a stock one but don't go running with the big boys.

Well durr. The point isn't getting P&S's to SLR level. It's getting RAW, full manual controls, and some other bonuses like scripting and remote control in a small <$200 package that fits in your pocket.

Some cameras can even push shutter speed. Here's a test by my A550 chasing scanlines on a CRT. Image on the right is 1/2000, the fastest shutter speed advertised by Canon and on the left is the shutter speed maxed out by CHDK. I'll narrow it down later but it looks close to 1/6000. And this is just a test. Of course it wouldn't be practical for me to shoot that fast.

And the "computers" on the cameras are the image processor which is customized to save the RAW and the firmware that tells the other components what to do which is customized into allowing full manual controls.

Cars are a very poor metaphor for cameras anyway.

HEY GUYS MY POINT AND SHOOT IS FUCKING GREAT

LOOK AT WHAT I CAN DO WITH IT

IT FITS IN MY POCKET TOO
>> Anonymous
>>160776

The aperture and shutter override is badass, but but can pushing these damage the camera at all?
>> Anonymous
>>160795
At least for shutter speed it just hits the limit allowed by the firmware at some point, and using CHDK to set values slower/faster than that has no effect.
>> Anonymous
>>160904
Actually, CHDK breaks that limit. For long exposures, we're only limited by the long processing it takes to develop the RAW and for fast exposures, we're only limited by how fast the shutter can go physically.

"While you may select slow shutter speeds longer than 65 seconds, that value will be beyond all camera model's known capability at this time. If you select a longer shutter speed than 65 seconds the camera will stop at 65 seconds and record your frame"

I'm hoping that the 1/9000 sec shutter speed can freeze frame capture my fap hand at full throttle!!!
