I just got my 1st DSLR, the Canon rebel xsi.
Any tips for this camera?

Rebels are nice starter cameras. Just have fun with it. My only tip would be to get a huge memory card and just keep snapping and dont delete anything in the field. Even if you think a picture looks bad after you take it you never know if you might find charm in it after you offload it.

The battery grip's nice to have. I picked it up purely for portrait orientation, but I'm finding it's quite nice to have on just in general. Now it never comes off. Highly recommended.
>> Anonymous
so you really are one of those rebel faggots with their battery grips

i hate those faggots
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM

Oh, yeah. Don't forget that I'm an L-glass on a Rebel faggot too. Mustn't neglect a single talking point.

i use L lenses on my rebel with grip too

but i don't hate myself and i'm not a faggot, you are
>> Anonymous
nothing wrong with the battery grip on a rebel. just don't pretend like you're running around with a 1Ds. Though most people just think if you have a DSLR you are a pro...
>> Anonymous
>>299486Though most people just think if you have a DSLR you are a pro...

yeah, that fucking sucks, specially since in this day and age, EVERY random idiot has one

i roll in to event sometimes with my full kit: that's body, grip, big 2.8 zoom with hood, flash with diffuser. and then i see a bunch of idiots running around with a d40 or rebel with kit lenses

instant facepalm irl (and no, they don't do a better job than i do)

Because everyone is so pro and can't have a semi-nice camera for a hobby.
gb2/b/ you elitist faggot.
>> Anonymous
except your hobby is hindering my work

it's like some guy coming to a F1 race with his touring car. yeah, it's still a pretty fucking good car compared to regular cars, but it's going to fuck with the F1 cars

nothing about being elitist. and 98% of them really have no idea what the fuck they're doing

how are they hindering your work?
why should you get complete unfettered access to whatever you want?
how do you expect these people to learn?
is this really all you have to worry about?

because i'm paid to do a job?

>> how do you expect these people to learn?

do it in your basement or garage for all i care. you don't go on a racetrack where others are racing to learn how to drive. have more sense than that

go volunteer to do jobs for free and learn that way, don't do it while i'm working

>> Anonymous
>>299576and 98% of them really have no idea what the fuck they're doing
so? you're not paying them

although I will admit, it's annoying trying to get random people snapping pics out of the fucking way when you're trying to get a team picture of the tournament winners and their parents are all standing directly in the way.

I focus on working around them, however, which for me meant using wider lenses (to stand in the mess with the faggots and get the whole team in the frame) and getting a proper radio trigger setup for my strobes.

>because i'm paid to do a job?
remember, you're paid to document and capture an event, not influence it. as annoying as people are, you have to realize they have a right to be there too. asking people to politely GTFO works wonders sometimes
>> Anonymous
>>299640

huh? okay, and it's my job to deliver the goods so i can get paid

what are you saying? that's it's okay to mess up something and tell whoever is paying "hey, man. it's only a job.." no, that doesn't work

i'm ranting about those idiots, yeah. there's really nothing about being elitist.

>>299650so? you're not paying them

i don't see what you're getting at. i'm the one who is supposed to do this, if some random idiot comes along and ruins your workflow, it's going to impede you in doing your job. it's really simple, not hard to understand

>> remember, you're paid to document and capture an event, not influence it. as annoying as people are, you have to realize they have a right to be there too. asking people to politely GTFO works wonders sometimes

how am i influencing it? i don't stop anyone from taking photos at the same time because they are guests, i'm not.

i was just posting on an anon forum about idiots fucking with me and people got their panties in a bunch. probably the exact same people who ARE fucking with me in real life or recognize themselves in doing the same thing
>> Anonymous
>>299656i don't see what you're getting at.

you said they have no idea what they're doing, I assumed you were referring to their ability to work their shitty entry level SLR's

>how am i influencing it?
I was implying that being paid to take pictures of an event is just that, obviously you're not in a studio so you don't have control over what goes on around you, you're getting paid to get good, useable pictures in the environment, and faggots in your way is just something you gotta deal with.

I know where you're coming from, I assumed you were one of those dicks that assume because you're being paid to shoot a wedding, performance, or whatever, that you get full reign to tell people what to do because I'M THE BIG SHOT PHOTOGRAPHER I NEED TO TAKE PICTURES OK.

jealous much?

i know they do a crappy job, you can just tell from the way they handle their camera already. there would be 0 difference from their dslr and a point and shoot, except their images are less noisy. front on flash for the fail

sure are a lot of jealous people around here

>>299576
You remind me of this dude who had slave strobes on tripods and was trying to take photos in a controlled enviroment. Except there was like 100 people all with cameras also wanting to take photos with the flash on. Poof! There goes the slaves. "Hey please stop taking photos it's interfering with the flash recycle times causing me to lose a/wait for a shot".

You know what I said to him? "Fucking man up and buy some wireless strobes or use PC sync cables and stop pretending to be a pro asshole. If you want private photos put up a blind or something".

I then walked off and took photos elsewhere.

I'm just going to raise the concern again about what could happen to any oft-flashed-by-tourists scenic site if ad companies got a hold of this or something similar. Now, he's got a patent pending and seems pretty left-wing (The RAF logo? Really?) but the patent could be denied, and anyway, patents expire eventually.
>> AmbientAlchemy !!7p/FL19nuol
>>301275
It would be a good way for galleries and private tourist attractions to prevent unauthorized photographs. They could use it to watermark any photo taken.

This could be defeated by:

1. shopping out that exact color level in a mask

2. firing multiple strobe flashes before shutter release to exhaust the fulgurator's capacitors before you take your shot

3. using a fast lens without flash.
>> Anonymous
>>301279
Well that's fine, although not authorizing photographs is a little silly of places.

Of course there's plenty of ways to get around it, I mean you really could just ask someone to stand in front of the lens while you take the picture, but I'm not talking about photographs-qua-photographs, I'm talking about no one being able to take a tourist snap of the Trevi Fountain without a big Prada ad all over it.
>> NatureGuy !se3A3TwzdY
God damn it that thing pisses me off. Although the possibility of putting something Rick Austley on a building in New York City whenever someone took a photo would be decently funny.
>> AmbientAlchemy !!7p/FL19nuol
>>301280
> just ask someone to stand in front of the lens
The venue could just put it in the ceiling next to the CCTV. In fact the next generation of CCTV might include this feature built in (if they can get around the patent).

> I'm talking about no one being able to take a tourist snap of the Trevi Fountain without a big Prada ad all over it.
Yeah. But they wouldn't be allowed to do that for the same reason that they aren't allowed to project an ad on it continuously.

We're in the "frontier" period of this technology. Not regulated yet.
