Oh wow, Leica would make a lens like this.

Stuff from Leica that would be more useful than pandering to speedfags and widefags and widespeedfags:

1) VF upgrade for M8. At least more accurate framelines, preferably the hypothetical electronically projected ones people talk about on the Internet, so anything would work.
2) The latter opening up chances for M8 lenses that actually correspond to the perfect 75 and 90 focal lengths, instead of the too-shot 50-for-75 and too-long 75-for-90 replacements. And hopefully a wide normal, like the 40 'Cron was on film.

Also, I'm skeptical about the size of the 21 and 24/1.4. Unless they're only meant to cover the M8's sensor (what deranged maniac would want a film 21/1.4?) they're going to be huge. And Leica has heretofore had a policy of no digital-only lenses for the M and R systems.

It's a matter of target market, really. Lots of people are iffy about switching to RFs because of frameline inaccuracy, but I doubt Leica will ever lose an existing customer because of it. Someone on RFF theorized that they decided to pander to "speedfags and widefags and widespeedfags" because it's the only way they can keep afloat. They can't compete on price (thanks Cosina) or price/quality (thanks Cosina/Zeiss/their own used stuff), so they go for optical innovation - nobody else is ever going to release a 21/1.4 and they know it. And Leica has tended to do well when they're setting new trends (screw mount, M3) , and not so well when they're trying to play catch-up (M5, M8), and I think the current management realizes this.

Someone also posted a picture of the 21/1.4 from the same leak on RFF. It's a little thinner and a little longer than the 50/1 Noctilux. Seems pretty reasonable.
