Well, first off, you want to have them stuffed and mounted or they'll squirm a lot and make your shots blurry. After that, it's just like shooting any sort of small product shot.

try not to use too strong a flash, or even any flash at all

flash can kill babies

for a nice generic shot, use a 50mm indoors with indirect lighting. open your aperture as much as you need to, typically all of the way. set your focal point to the child's eye (even if it's closed). Having a parent hold the child near an open window works, or nestle it into a boppy or something similar. Also, diaper-only shots are very popular since newborns tend to be swimming in their layette.

For a moment I thought it was being eaten by a colourful clam

Disregard these two. Use the most powerful flash you can get your hands on.

I've used flash on kids and had flash used on me when I was a kid and I've yet to witness a sudden and gruesome death.

Babies are perfect models. They never say no.

That sounds so wrong on 4chan. It's only the context of being in this thread that saves it.

So your thesis is that the fact that we're talking about babies being unable to say no to being photographed makes it *less* wrong?

In the contex of it becoming baby-raper "it's awwwright" 2, then yes it is a huge relief.

Still, I'm hoping that he means they aren't shy or bothered by the camera, like some animals and kids can be rather than anything sinister.
