oh hi, since the other thread reached it's image reply limit and died I though why not make a new one.

so I went to shinjuku yesterday evening to take some night shots of the metropolitan government building, I set up my tripod and start shooting, then a guard approaches me and asks me politely not to shoot with a tripod... "hand is ok" ... GAH
at least I got one shot done.

looks great

I hate how all this terrorism shit has got people scared of photographers. What is a terrorist going to do with a picture, or with a tripod mounted camera?

only pros use tripods i guess.. and that is why security at buildings are told to have them not used..

the thought of a pro profiting off the sale of a picture of MY building is just too much for some...

despite of what conspiracy theorists think, its nothing to do with terrorism.

tl;dr. terrorists use google street view, pro photogs use tripods

From (admittedly bad) memory, there's some by-law in Japan which states you need to ask permission before photographing a building (!).

Sympathy goes out to you on the security guards, rentacops, not least the local block association members poking their noses in it.

If you are brave enough, try getting a full on shot of whoever is hassling you, and make out you don't speak Japanese OR English - try faking Spanish or French etc, that usually fazes the fuckers long enough so you can get your shot, and hopefully one of them too.

Glad to see you still posting btw.

This happened to me in the British Museum, i was sat down on one of the marble plinths in the main hall with my tripod set up about waist high. What are they expecting? A kid to trip on it? I guess all the spiky weapons and antiques are child proof then...
