I'm still trying to figure out how to use my rebel xti, so I went on a stroll downtown and took this pic of a protester.

I like it, wish I could see his face though.

I have one similar, but this is much clearer and fiercer. I like it! Overall good composition--AND subject.

i dont like the blur you added
>> Anonymous
its not added, the OP has an SLR camera with a big sensor. big sensor means big blur in out of focus areas.

I agree it doesnt look quite right though. either they tried to add to it in photoshop, or my eyes are too damn tired, but it seems like the nearest tree is blurrier than the bus in the distance...

yeah I added the blur effect because i thought the more shallow depth of field the better, I was wrong. I should have just posted the original.

no, its added. you can tell. itll already be a blurred, yes, but he added more is what im saying. parts of the trees are more blurred than others, the truck on the left side of the sign is less blurred than the right side. the part near the left of his head is less blurred than the other parts, etc.

the blur created by photoshop never looks like the blur caused by camera/lens.

Fake blur shot looks good as a thumbnail but looks like ass when full size.

Real shot looks awesome both thumbnail and fullsize.

lens blur usually looks better than this gaussian shit
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
yeah one thing i've learned about blur tool is that subtlety is key. you cannot go blurring up a whole background like you can get away with it.

why didn't you used a bigger aperture for a greated DOF when you took the pic in the first place?
I mean
ISO 400
1/500
f/5.6

It was day right? Using ISO 400 in sunlight?

Anyway I liked the shot, the composition and everything.

Because he was shooting with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II at the far telephoto end.

I.e., f/5.6 was as wide as he could go.
