aww no! :( thats not the one i wanted to proast.
that ones blurry
but thats the only one i took without the lense filter because there was a scratch on the filter somewhere and it showed up on the photo.

you can delete posts, you know (even if you didn't set a password)

also, please, don't post pngs. Just don't. /p/'s been over this 923012302 times, PNGS have no place in photography.

Thanks for the advice.
What should I save my scans as? I've only ever shot analouge, so I'm no expert on file types.

what format does /p/ shoot in?
raw, tiff. jpg? I shoot in raw
>> Anonymous
what are the specs on this shot i like it ;)
>> Anonymous

>PNGS have no place in photography

What better format is there for saving photographs that everyone can display, i.e. people who don't have Adobe software can display? I agree putting a 2.33MB file through 4chan's servers isn't the best idea, but I go from RAW to PSD to PNG with my photographs.

What are the other options for a lossless, universally displayable file format? Just TIFF and BMP.

save it as a max quality jpg. we arent nitpicking on jpeg compression artifacts here. even at max quality the jpg will be much smaller than a png at the same size and there will be minimal artifacts.
>> Anonymous
I'm not talking about on /p/.

>I agree putting a 2.33MB file through 4chan's servers isn't the best idea,

But for my own viewing, for sharing on CDs with people, and for other applications, PNG FTW.

As far as I'm concerned, unless bandwith is an issue as it is for 4chan and some of the users on /p/, if there will be an improvement in image quality just by clicking a different box in Photoshop, it's worth it.

can you tell the difference between these two 100% crops? i just grabbed a random raw i had sitting around.

Yes, it's minor but it's there. I can see compression artifacts on the JPEG and the colors look slightly more saturated in the JPEG.

Do they both look fine? Yes, but its wrong to say that there isn't a quality difference between a JPEG and a PNG.
>> Anonymous
>>59220
did i say there isnt? no. i was just making the point that the difference is extremely minor and really isnt worth twice the file size to post on a board that has bandwidth problems anyway. again, we do not nitpick on tiny artifacts. in fact, we prefer jpeg simply because its smaller in size so we dont have to wait 8 years for a pic to load. png has no place on /p/ may be more accurate than in photography.

>I agree putting a 2.33MB file through 4chan's servers isn't the best idea,

>> Anonymous
>>59225
well you said what else is there to do that everyone can see without using adobe software. i misread that other post, but yeah, you dont have to share lossless to everyone. the general population wouldnt be able to tell the difference. personally i share all my pictures in jpg just because i feel its like a courtesy thing to show people pictures that arent 4mb. but i guess if whoever you show your pictures to dont mind downloading huge files to see your pictures go for it.
>> Anonymous
>>59228
>the general population wouldnt be able to tell the difference

Because photographers have special genetically engineered super-eyes, of course!

If a piece of artwork is genuinely good, anyone will be able to understand it and be affected by it. If it's not, then there's no point in sharing it.

>personally i share all my pictures in jpg just because i feel its like a courtesy thing to show people pictures that arent 4mb. but i guess if whoever you show your pictures to dont mind downloading huge files to see your pictures go for it.

It's not a download thing. If I'm going to share a set of photographs with someone, I hand it to them on CDs.

>> Anonymous
>>59256
Same here. However, this is quite explainable.
He uploaded the JPG first: This could mean the PNG is just a save of the JPG, leaving the compression artifacts etcetera of the JPG inside the PNG as well.
Or, he saved the JPG at a very high level, meaning he just compressed badly.
>> Anonymous
the 401 in toronto? reminds me of the opening for sportsnet connected
>> Anonymous
>>59265
i saved each from the raw, not one off the other. and my point was, saving at max quality jpg may leave tiny artifacts, but its half the size of a png in this case.

also, what i saw was a tiny change in reds. i didnt see the blues like you said lol.

>>59229
not specially designed eyes, just more likely to scrutinize the tiny quality imperfections if thats the kind of person they are and if thats how they feel about photos.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>59265
Go ahead and ponder the fact that a "badly compressed" JPEG is still roughly half the size of a PNG for pretty much indistinguishable quality. Kinda proves the point of the pro-JPEG faction. :-P
>> Anonymous
Overexposure? You mean long exposure?
>> Anonymous
>>59276
No, it doesn't. Why give up image quality over a little hard drive space?
>> Anonymous
>>59279
Because the savings are enormous compared to the marginal image quality lost. you'll have to pixel-peep to discern the differences between a HQ JPEG and a PNG... and even then.

Anyway, if you want HQ pics, use RAW.
>> Anonymous
>>59280
1. RAW is the first step in a workflow, not the final product for people to view.

2. It's hard drive space. It's not like it's some hugely finite resource.
