Does my lens suck or am I doing it wrong? Anonymous
I was doing a shoot the other day with one of my most trusted lens. I use it mostly in the 24mm and up range even though it can go down to 17mm but this time I had to use its widest setting for a group shot.

Anyway, I have lights set up and I'm at f/8 and 1/200 all the time, works well enough until I have to move things around. Normally I just focus on the face and it's fine because I'm at "portraiture" focal lengths and I don't have to recompose. But this time since I was too lazy to move the focus point somewhere else, I kept it at the center and just focus on one person's face and moved my camera back to frame my shot.

I didn't review too much on my camera screen and it's only after I downloaded the photos that I noticed everything seemed a little bit off. Things looked in focus but it really felt different from when it hits absolute perfect focus, "tack sharp" if you know what I mean, which I know the lens is fully capable of.

So.. is it me doing it wrong? The focus and recompose thing or is my lens bad on the wide end and I just never noticed? I'm thinking it's the lens because at f/8 and at the distance I was at, everything should've been in focus or acceptable focus.

The resized photos look sharp enough so most people won't notice but it's bugging me a bit.

Yeah, I think this is it. There's a certain magic that happens when focus lands exactly where it should.

Once again proving how bad a technique "focus and recompose" is.

If you are using the canon 17-85, you have to realize that it gets really soft at 17.

Which lens are you using?

Auto Focus is the bane of Photography. Manual Focus up in dis' bitch.

I wasn't recomposing in any extravagant way, just moving the camera laterally back in position to my frame. But maybe it's one of those small things yield huge mistakes kind of thing. I was hoping I was well within my focus range and the math checks out using a depth of field calculator.

Or maybe my lens is just super weak at the widest angle and I never noticed.

Nope. Not going to say what I shoot with to avoid brand bias. No, it's not a Sony lol

I will post some samples after.
