Hey guys,
I need a digital slr. and it has to be Nikon (I have a lot of Nikon glass, as I've shot Nikon exclusively for nearly a decade). I've lurked enough to know the D40 is out of the question, but how about the D60? I need it for a job this Sunday where I'm required to shoot digital. I've also considered the D80 but I don't have enough to buy it in time. And I think that would be overkill, as I plan to continue to shoot my F100. I need opinions.

Unless all of your lenses are af-s (and I doubt they are)
Get the D80 (used maybe?), or a D50 / D70s (would be used since they don't sell them new anymore)

D60 and D40 + D40x all don't have the screw driven AF, so unless the lenses are af-s don't bother.

Fuck, I thought they had them starting at the D60. I didn't want to go in debt again either with a D80 body. I don't think I'll find a used one for Sunday.

Another question, is 5 megapixels that bad? (in case I have to buy a disposable d40)

Also,

the lens would work with manual focus, correct? I have the luxury of time for this gig, so it wouldn't affect me much.

D40 is 6 megapickles, and it sure doesn't sound like you're needing more. Used D50 is always an option (and quite cheap), it also happens to have in-body AF.

Yes, you can still manual focus. The viewfinder isn't so great though. I imagine you'll quickly find yourself not wanting to do this after trying it for a bit.

Isn't so great in the D40 and/or D60?

yes manual focus would work, and I print 6MP images (D40 res) at 12x18"
If you need bigger, then maybe you would want the D80, but 99% of the time 6MP will be enough

All the lower end DSLR, that I know of, have lousy viewfinders. It's just something they skimp on to save money, I suppose.

look into the d40x

Like people have said, all D40/50/60 VFs suck, you won't want to focus with them except with a magnifier and/or a proper focusing screen with a split prism rangefinder.

The D50 is the only one with AF, so your options are pretty much that or a D80, if you can get either in time.

Do you live in a place with rental shops?

The older Pentax *istD series actually had some of the best crop viewfinders made, the same size as the Kx0D series.

If you're ok going used, you'll find the D200 will be great. You won't have the step down to consumer controls - more of your controls will stay in the same place. Cheaper than a D80 on eBay, too.
Avoid the D70 and D50 - tiny viewfinders are tiny.

Actually I'll be using an old 3 megapixel point and shoot. Turns out the customer wants me to shop in an addition to a building so I'll rely on my computer more than my camera.

Also to conclude this thread, if I can't find a used D80 or D200 in a week, I'm buying a new D80.

>>a proper focusing screen with a split prism rangefinder

offtopic newfag question here:
is that the thing in the middle of the viewfinder where you focus until you see a straight line? if the focus is off you see the thing for cut in half for example with the top part to the left and the bottom part to the right.
bad explanation but i hope you understand.

3:16 on this video.

There's others on YouTube, but this one is the brightest/clearest.

I got a second hand D200 recently and it is very nice. Heaps of low shutter count ones floating around as pros use them as backups.

Just keep an eye out for hot pixels at IS ~300 and up - they are apparently rather common on the D200.
