Anybody know of a better way to shoot Architectural Photos other than spending gobbs of green on one of these bad boys?

or

anybody know of a GOOD tutorial on how to craft said lens out of old parts?

was afraid of that.... lol, looks like i'll be blowing my bonus this year...

i DO have some quarstions for ya though seeing as how you've used one and all...

Is this REALLY better than a bellows (view) camera? or just the fact that you can use it with your digital justifies the cost?

how the hell does this thing work properly? lol. i understand the concept and the diagrams i've seen, but is this some sorta Hadron Collider side effect lens or what? Angle of subject, tilt of focus, ect..ect... lol.

also, does this monster use autofocus at all? if so, i'm guessing taht the AF feature is built in to the collar and not the lens? Or am i just retarded?

1. No. But it's way more convenient.
2. Not sure. It works, though.
3. No, it's a manual-focus lens. It's also much lighter than its giant block of tilt unit would initially suggest.

Don't listen to this fag. just use a DIY Tilt Shift. mine only cost me 65 bucks in total

>Is this REALLY better than a bellows (view) camera?
Depends on how you define "better". It's certainly a hell of a lot more convenient, but the view camera will give you better overall image quality...assuming you don't fuck it up in one of the myriad ways that using a large format film camera would make it easy to fuck up.

(Caveat: I have never so much as touched either a view camera or a tilt/shift lens. Well, except for the view camera they have set up at the Eastman House museum, but that doesn't really count)

I know there are some much, much cheaper Russian tilt/shift lenses out there that I believe will mount on a Nikon. Probably lose metering, but auto metering on a tilt/shift lens is weird and inaccurate anyway, as I understand it.

actually... post pics you've taken with it to prove it works... then i'll believe that you can build one that works just as well as one pictured in OP's post.

>>272718
by better, op means more cost effective and more easily transported. I'm not too hot on the idea of carrying around a 20+ pound camera with rediculous setup times, costly development issues, and huge ongoing expense record... lol. Think i'll go with this bad boy unless>>272716
can provide me with a CONVINCING link for a tuto on how to build one. The tute's i've seen so far have sucked ass as far as consistancy in photo's go.... one was made out of a rubber "accordian" plunger. Oddly enough, that was the ONLY one that seemed like it might work. lol.

i lurk plenty homo, i said a USEFULL build, not some built out a plunger/bike innertube/old shit camera with black cloth tape wrapped the fuck around it till it looks like a shoved a dying kitten into the front of my camera.

i've been trying to understand how tilt shift lenses work

i think i understand the shift but not the tilt part, so i drew up something and someone correct me if this is how it works

left diagram, you aim the lens at an angle to get the entire building in the frame, but your plane of focus will be at an angle and not perpendicular to the ground so parts of the building will be out of focus, right?

so the tilt lets you tilt the plane of focus and have the entire front face of the building in focus but still aimed at an angle

am i doing it right?

>>Is this REALLY better than a bellows (view) camera? or just the fact that you can use it with your digital justifies the cost?

A view camera is way better if need extreme shift and tilt. A view camera also allows you to change lenses. You could easily find a view camera used with 2 lenses for the cost of that Nikon 24mm, but as you mention that wouldn't give you digital capability and it wouldn't be anywhere near as portable. Also a view camera of course is LF, and from 4x5 up film is still king (at least for now)
The other thing is that with this lens setting are much more repeatable. If you try it, I think your really going to like it.

It does not autofocus and in fact it's best to manual meter, unless you are doing just very slight shift.

Anyone claiming something you slam together with a plunger is better than the OP lens is just stupid.

Doctor: You're sick, take some penicillin.
Patient: Fuck you, no one needs penicillin, moldy bread is cheaper. I'm just going to go dig through your dumpster.

It's like that.

Except homemade tilt shift solutions give even better results than that crap in OP.

LISTEN UP FAGS, I WILL EXPLAIN WHY HOMEMADE TILT SHIFT LENSES WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY
normal tilt-shift lenses produce an exceptionally large image circle, about as big as medium format, in order to have proper coverage when using the shift function.
if you build one yourself from a normal 35mm lens, no matter how well it functions, it will never have proper coverage due to the small image circle.
tl:dr, buy a proper tilt-shift lens
>> Anonymous
A tilt-shift lens can't be easily replicated; you can make something using an old lens and a plunger, but it'll be far more cumbersome. Some lucky guys with access to industrial milling tools make their own custom tilt-shift lenses, but that takes quite a lot of time and engineering skill.

But such a lens is only necessary if you shoot objects from really awkward angles and/or can't fit them in focus; in other cases, software perspective correction does the job quite fine (of course, at some expense of angle of view and image quality, but when do you really need per-pixel sharpness on a 10+ MP photo?)
>> Anonymous
>>272760
hmm...? that is true. OR you can use a lens from a larger format you assfag think before posting retard
>> Anonymous
>>272760
Duh. That's why smart people use 35mm film lenses for APS/Four Thirds tilt-shifts and medium format lenses for 35mm tilt-shifts.
Of course, this approach fails when you need a wide-angle tilt-shift lens like the OP picture.
>> Anonymous
google araxphoto. the guy has a pretty reasonable adaptor that takes MF lenses from kiev cameras (also zeiss lenses for pentacon6) and mounts to 35mm cameras.
>> Anonymous
>>272760
well actually that issue is not THAT bad, because you move the image circle of the 35mm to the side you need, and you can move it at least half a frame on each side.
half of the image will probably not be usable because it's outside the image circle, but still you have more coverage.

you can replicate basically all of the functions of a large format camera in photoshop. the only thing that's kind of hard is the super narrow wedge of focus, but you can get "good enough" with some effort.

it doesn't convincingly convey depth of field. try using a gradient for a quick mask, then use the lens blur filter.

I'm actually unclear as to how this lens is supposed to work. I've never used a PC lens on a 35, but I've got relatively extensive experience with a 4x5 view camera.

With those, it's about shifting, and the tilt is just to compensate for the angled bellows, in normal circumstances. Basically, shifting allows the light rays to come from a different angle than usual, but the focal plane is still parallel to the subject, so straight lines stay straight. It's pretty crazy in action on the big screen of a view camera, it looks just like if you picked up the camera and carried it around, except you're staying still.

When taking pictures of something tall, it looks exactly as if you're floating in the air with the camera a couple stories up, pointed directly at the subject.
