Is this worth it for a small studio or should I just go DIY ala Strobist?
>> Anonymous
Yes if you have the money and experience and room for it. Yes if you have money to burn and don't have the experience and do have the room. No if you don't have the money or experience.

If you have no idea what you are doing, going the route of strobist will stop you wasting money.

I'd go for 2 (or more) SB-800's and a DIY ring.

just buy it..
looks cool, can you use it with other strobe packs?

What is the use of this shit? Is there any comparison shot betwen when you use one and when you don't use one?

IF you got money to burn DO IT!!! i'm tempted but i really want to try the Strobist cardboard contraption just for the DIY factor.

I'll probably get this after my Christmas holiday though. I just want t do ring flash cause it automatically makes me a pro.

google it for images. Gives an interesting sense of depth.

I think a beginner would be better starting with some standard strobes. It's a very specific look you might not want all the time.

There's some truth in that. Ring light/flash makes your shots look like they're proper HDR stuff without even having to bracket.

Huh? i was kinda kidding...but what does the ringflash have to do with Dynamic range?

i'm confused

i think he means the ringflash gives a look somewhat sort of similar to a tonemapped image.

Well i don't know what is so special, as i am a newbie i need comparison shots betwen the two.

The alienbees ringlight is, essentially, a hunk of shit compared to the other, better ringlights on the market. If you're in a big enough city to have rental houses, just rent a Profoto Pro 7 pack with the Profoto ringlight. Nothing else touches it, not even Broncolor.
