Hey /p/. I have just given up on photography. I am sick and tired of being looked at like some fucking freak when i'm taking photos of random shit by myself with some massive SLR. Same applies if I go to a beach for example where I get strange looks like i'm a pedo. Does anyone else feel the same?

I'm a big creepy-looking fat guy with a beard. So people look at me like a freak no matter what I'm doing. So might as well be taking pictures, I say.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
Also, can I have your massive SLR?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
I'm so wrapped up in what im doing when i'm out with my cam that I dont' even notice people looking at me. who the hell cares how people look at you? you'll never see them again. Just turn around, take the pic, and say "anything else i can help you with? that'll be 5 bucks if you want the shot"

take a pic of them, I mean.

Sage for idiocy. Why do you give a damn about how people is looking at you?

Focus on the camera, concentrate on enjoying the act of capturing the moment.

Most people who look usually aren't really judging you, they're just looking cause, oh hey, something unusual.
As long as you pay attention to what you're doing and don't actively antagonize anyone, why worry? The only people that have actually talked to me were interested or curious, not angry or disturbed.
Besides, photographers are freaks. We're weird and have unusual habits. Just own it.

I was self conscious when I had my little P&S, but that was a couple years ago. Now with the SLR's people just assume you are there for a reason / paid to be there, Or serious about your hobby.

Street isn't my thing, so having a DSLR is mostly just an advantage for me.Simply just having friends who you are there with makes it a lot easier to convince people you aren't just a creep, and also reduces the likelihood of shouting matches to ensue.

I was scouting out a hotel lobby / event room, (for a wedding - finding the color temperature for my flash gels) and I was basically trespassing uninvited. Yet the hotel staff were more intimidated by me and my friend when they came in to tidy up the area.

I'm an average guy with a beard, who looks like a stereotypical "photojournalist" (especially with the backwards hat I seem to always have when I'm shooting).

People look at me weird, but it's not the "pedo" looks, it's the "why is this guy sticking a macro lens in a bush at sunrise?" looks.
>> Anonymous
Wha? Part of the rush I get from shooting is that people will stop and look at what I'm taking pictures of. Even a little point-and-shoot is enough to make people notice you and get out of your way. Having a camera gives you power.

Only time something bad happened was when I took a picture of an embassy. The guard outside got reeeeal touchy about that.
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
Sometimes when I'm out shooting, I have my camera on my side and the strap on the opposite shoulder. When I walk around, people that pass by me end up staring at it as they pass by. It's like having a penis on the outside and having it attract attention. Bow chicka wow wow!
>> Anonymous
I dont like it, but then I remember my self looking at someones camera as i pass by to see what type it is, i quickly forget about it
>> Anonymous
>>255151

also, I'll never see those people again
>> Anonymous
I get questions, looks, good and bad

picked up a chick once when i was out shooting, haha

for the most part i just think to myself "your here for the money, ignore them"
>> Anonymous
are you kidding me? being a photographer means that you are the most sought after guy in the room. girls will even brought you drinks to be in your pictures!
its simple as that! (party photographer sweetest taboo)

I used to be really self-conscious about walking around with my camera, but now it's just annoying to have to worry.

Hesitation = Missed Shots

Usually if people give me the "look," I try to take photographs of things /around/ them to make them run away (that is, if Ithink they're going to ruin a shot for me). I never take a picture /of/ them, because that could start a dispute that I don't have time to deal with.

That's no SLR boy..

Also, I'm also feeling like a fucking freak from time to time, but this is mostly when I put cameras straight in front (+- one meter) of people I've never met to take their portraits unasked.
>> Anonymous
That's why I only whip my camera out at touristy places like zoos and parks. I'm so self-conscious. I know that most people would ignore me, but when I see a kid walking around with a DSLR, I just thing "what a faggot".

all men with cameras are potential pedophiles. only women should really be allowed to use them in public to prevent abuse of children
>> Anonymous
Oh, I also rarely hesitate to take photos of objects / architecture when I really shouldn't but I need to grow a pair to take photos of people.

Street photography here is boring. The people all wear uniforms, shirts honoring the cult of personality.
If you're really creepy then just get a friend with a camera to go along with you. I do the same if I'm at a place where people wouldn't be used to a guy with a camera taking random shots. Also, because I'm a hybrid most people think I'm a lost tourist if I dress that way and generally ignore me.
>> Anonymous
I walk around with my DSLR hoping people will say something. I take staroids and I will rage if anyone says anything negative about me.

Hell, even if i think they are thinking negative about my photog skills ill rage.

sigh. sadly though it's so true.

but most of them carry around with them digitals

I shot bands to harden my concentration. Other than that I've experienced none of what you describe because I'm not a pedo and my subject interests reflected that. I did shoot B&W nudes but the women knew the shot was my focus.

I see a lot of asian tourists here in LA, especially Japanese ones, with consumer DSLRs, and even some with the pro stuff. Kinda odd to see some dude walking around with a D3...
