OK say it was my birthday yesterday and my grandmother has just given me 750 bucks!
my dad convinced her to because she helped my brother with car repairs.
im going to get a lens, hoping for a fast lens or atleast faster than 3.4
i have an e-510 anyone have any suggestions for good lenses? they dont HAVE to be fast but it would be nice. ive only looked in to the 25mm pancake because ive been wanting it for a while but now that i have money im not sure if i should go for it or something a bit more pricey.....

and since someone will be asking "what kind of photography work will you be doing" or something so il just say now. i do alot of panos if i do any landscape stuff, but i like doing portraits the most.

any help will be much appreciated but i dont know if il get help or just trolls.

pic unrelated

this is what i meant to do, my bad heavy

np, I've almost done the same thing several times.

The Olympus 7-14 is pretty sick, but it's also about double your budget... I don't know much about the Olympus system, so that's the only wide I know offhand.

WELL it doesnt matter i ordered

im hoping it will be great! all the reviews with the exception of a couple seemed pretty good.
close enough to the 50mm mark i wanted and 1 or 2 stops faster than the pancake so i think im hoping it will do the job. if not il have to send the fucker back asap!

Shit's gonna look a bit like a fucking leica with a noctilux, except neither of the two elements is half as good as the first examples.

everyone said it was sharp even at 1.8

Not the point. The lens is xbox huge for your tiny DSLR. Fuck your 4/3rds and all the optical complications it represents.

oh i had no idea what you meant by>>227045....
i dont really care about size as long as it fits, and doesnt way like 3 pounds.

See, the problem with your system and lens choice is that you're grabbing a lens designed to give an angle of view of about, say, 80, 90 degrees or so, only to use it as a 45 degree lens. That means youre grabbing a very expensive offbrand lens for something others can get for 80 bucks. Chances are that, because you're only seeing the center of the image, too, you're exposing its inherent optical design flaws (depending on how the lens was optimized).

The more I analyze the 4/3rds system, the less I like it as an engineering solution, to say the truth. Cant say I dont like your pancake lenses and tiny tiny dslrs though.

I dunno, the 24mm sigma is one of the most pointless lenses for 4/3. So fucking huge and expensive, you should've gotten a 30/1.4 or a leica 25/1.4 (well, the latter is as big and even more expensive, but it's fucking leica and f/1.4)

That's assuming you want a fast standard prime; but I'd get the 11-22 for panoramas or the 50/2 for portraits.

woundt a 100mm lens be a bit long for portraits?
i was going to go for the 25 1.4 but its 800 bucks, and i dont have the money for that. most of the 750 had to go into savings.

i wanted a 50mm equiv prime and the faster of course the better, this was the best i could get, with my budget.

unless its OBVIOUSLY not sharp or some other optical design flaws shows a lot, i probably will not notice.
the lens was designed for 4/3s was it not?

i REALLY dont see why you guys are all complaining about size, as long is its not like a telephoto type length and wider than my camera i dont care.

the only thing im worried about is sigmas quality control issues that ive heard about, and its 2 step auto/manual focus change.

I think that they made/designed the lens and then put different mounts on it so they could sell it to everyone. I was pondering buying that lens myself, but then again, I'd rather have this

A few things:

1. The Sigma probably isn't a good idea, because of its size, but it might be your only option, economically.

2. To the other guy- why would using only the very center portion show the flaws of the lens? Most lenses are best towards the center.

3. Back to the OP- 100mm is a fine portrait length, a touch on the long side and a little long for my town personal astes, but it's fine. Some legendary portrait lenses (The 105/1.5 Nikkor comes to mind) have been longer, even though the touted ideal is 85-90mm.

Look at it like this: 43mm equivalent is the true, exact normal focal length. This is like that 85-90mm equivalent there. 50mm is just a touch longer, like the 100mm equivalent.

It's like taking a 100% crop out of something. You're using a small portion, but blowing it up just as big as you would with another bigger-sensored camera.

ok well thanks for all the lens info. it will be here today! so il post some shots, good or not. hopefully i can prove all the nay sayers wrong.

i have another question now.
i got a vivitar 285 for my bday and im thinking i want/need a way to use it off of my hot shoe. mostly i think i need this because of the fact that the head doesn't rotate.
http://www.gadgetinfinity.com/product.php?productid=16727
im looking at getting that with one of those curly pc cords. my question is, is that safe? because Olympus offers various cords and a "safe" hotshoe adapter. do i NEED to get that? i definately dont want to fuck up my hotshoe, but id rather not buy olys overpriced accessories if i dont absolutely need to

That just goes to the sensor size-megapixels thing, and the issues (noise, DR, etc.) that go along with that. Optically, it should only improve things.
