at first glance, it seems too dark, and it also looks like a painting.

Whoa

Which australian town/city is this?

Its interesting...hard to tell because being as small as it is some detail gets lost, everything kind of blurs together.

Im unsure whether this is on my like or dislike pile.

If i could see more detail (like if it was higher res) i might be more inclined to like it.

I think it works...its definitely got something!

But i still feel lits a little lost in places, a little to murky and could use some more defined edges.
>> Anonymous
It almost looks like a drawing. cool effect. how do i acchieved this effect?
>> Anonymous
>>69782
i did it with photomatix pro 2.5 and photoshop cs2

took a lil while to get the right effect though :]
especially since it was my first one

Odd. To make HDR, Do you not take one shot underexposed, one normal, and one over exposed? If that is the case, how did you get the people to stay in the same spot? generally, they'll move with each frame

or... wtf. how does HDR work exactly?
>> Anonymous
>>69804

HDR can be done with a single jpg or raw file. It just comes out different.
>> Anonymous
>>69804
it's just done with software, I believe
>> Anonymous
>>69804
Just to clear the confusion: "HDR" usually talked about on forums actually involves a two-stage process:
1) First, several different exposures of the same scene (taken with a tripod) are merged into one high dynamic range (HDR) image.
2) Second, since a HDR image has more dynamic range than monitors are capable of displaying, it must be converted for viewing. If local brightness/contrast adjustment is used for this, the result may look unrealistic. This is NOT a characteristic of HDR image itself; the same local brightness/contrast adjustment can be applied to a non-HDR image, but the effect will be less pronounced or there will be too much noise in darker areas.

I have photoshop and I think I know it fairly well but I still have no idea how you guys even do it.

>>69768

looks like you went to the street pointed out in random direction, took a shot and added a bunch of special effects.
>> Anonymous
Cool image, like it a lot. Reminds me of Silent Hill, hehe.

Also, painting effect for win!
>> Anonymous
its not photography.

Fail. :(

HDR is definetly not photography. There is no truth.
>> Anonymous
>>69856
it's a picture. that's been taken with a camera. that has been manipulated to highlight the range of light. explain to me how that's not photography.
>> Anonymous
OP here!

>>69804
the people are in the same spot because the girl was fairly 'still' and the people in the background didn't move much either.
had to take about 20 photos to get the right pair.

>>69805
yea, HDR can be done with 1 file but you lose a lot of data or detail though. Tends to lose that HDR magic. :]

>>69824
yea that's what i did.
actually..
-i carefully framed the shot
-looked for interesting color combinations. -waited for a gap in the clouds to clear up.
-waited for people to stop moving in 2 seperate frames
-went for a classic color theme in photoshop to make it appear like an old photo
but yea.. just point n shoot and random effects. :] !!!

Erm. With one file, it's not HDR. HDR is a way to get more dynamic range than your imaging surface can produce natively. If you're doing it with one file, it's just...well, it's just DR.

its good composition imo. some of you may say 'lomo gtfo' but hey, aesthetically its a good capture so hdr or not its nice
>> Anonymous
cool!
>> Anonymous
Even if this isn't technically HDR, it is still a great example of good photography and art. The original photo was taken with a camera, then edited to create the end product, which shows superb composition, color, and contrast.
>> Anonymous
post the original one

why do ya say its technically not HDR?

this is what my town actually looks like in the afternoon now because of a fire miles and miles away that has been burning for weeks. everything is covered in a fine coat of ashes

Id like to see that.
>> Anonymous

First of all, the jpeg file you've posted to this site doesnt support HDR.

Rapidshare the OpenEXR file or something, if you wanna show the full HDR.
>> Anonymous
Hey everyone, let's post digital manipulations of poorly composed photographs and say they are art! Where the original would fail, because of a new trendy effect it might be aesthetically pleasing to graphic whores. Come on, it's the new thing! /p/ - Photoshop

I see nothing wrong with taking an unimpressive photo and filtering it to look really good. It's the result that matters. Of course, this stuff isn't pure photography anymore, but what's pure these days?

tl;dr Bressonfags GTFO
>> Anonymous !MjcMqTX/iM
>>70043
The problem is, a unimpressive picture filtered to hell isn't a good result. If the original picture doesn't look good, no matter what you do, end result won't be good either.
>> Anonymous
>>70059
Not exactly true. Many highly regarded pictures by famous photographers would've looked much less impressive if they were shot on low-contrast film with no filters and the most plain darkroom processing.
And OP picture looks good to me, maybe because I don't try to imagine how "unimpressive" the original might have been before HDR stuff.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>70063
Ansel Adams was famous for this. He felt that just as much art happened in the darkroom during postprocessing as happened when you clicked the shutter.

Jesus Christ would you guys stop nut busting over Ansel Adams. it is the most cliched shit that just gets constantly regurgitated.

You're confusing "Cliched" with "Frequently imitated."

I'm not that fond of Adams' style either, but you've got to admit, he knew his stuff.

I believe the original would have been a fine photo, not great, but decent. You can do a hell of a lot with a decent photo post-production.
