Expensive piece of shit, or not too terribly expensive and not that bad?

I like the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S, save your money unless you absolutely need zoom. Otherwise just get as close as possible to your subject.

Hrm, having checked one site about the 18-135
http://photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_18135_3556/index.htm
I then checked it about the 18-55
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_1855_3556_II/index.htm

The 18-55 shows distortion at the short end of 18, and decreases from there... Definitely better by 35 (the 18-135 goes the other direction of worse).
Even the 18-200 VR, one I was planning on replacing the 18-135 once I heard of its distortions, has even WORSE distortions!
http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_18200_3556vr/index.htm
I guess for now I'm sticking with it until I see something better....

Any lense that start that wide will have distortion. It's just the amount you're willing to put up with.

My 17-55mm 2.8 Nikkor has distortion too at the wide end, not nearly as bad as my 18-200mm but still there.

So would you use those as architecture lenses? Probably not if you can avoid it(or use photoshop or DxO to fix it)

distortion virtually disappears at 20mm for the 17-55 and about 24mm for the 18-200mm

What do you plan on shooting anyway?

18-135 is good when you need versatility and know how to correct geometry and CA in Photoshop. However, I wouldn't recommend buying it separately - it's only good when part of the D40X/D80 kit for some $200 extra over body only.

I had an N60, which I got in college for a photo class. I liked photography, and used the camera here and there, nothing exactly planned (no trips to X or Y just to photograph something). Got the D80 (with the 18-135 with it) because I liked the Nikon, but hated waiting for a whole roll to be finished, hated going to get it developed (and I never was fond of developing it myself), then hated having to scan in the pics (or negatives).
So what will I shoot? Dunno. Nothing set yet, I guess mostly random stuff as it stands. I still have my old SLR lenses too. But the 2 that would do for regular shooting, my 75-240-well, that starts at too far a distance. The other, a 35-80, was the kit lens with the N60. I guess that could do..

Which 35-80 is it? Just wondering whether or not it will metre with the D80.

The 18-135 is an alright lens judging by the specs, but to be honest, from people's opinion who i respect, people who are likely to move forward with their photography are better off without it.

I've been personally recommending to friends who are keen to pick up the tamron 17-50 2.8, since the aperture just gives it so much versatility. The 50mm (75mm) is long enough for most things too.

So i guess i've finally answered your original question after going round and round :D

AF Nikkor 35-80 1:4-5.6D

Autofocuses fine, apparently, and takes decent photos. But today I was out with my 18-135... And I'll admit I liked the wide end, taking photos at 18. The 35-80 I doubt would've taken such nice wide shots, albeit it might have been without such bad distortion. So I guess I wouldn't mind a nice lens like that Tamron. I have a 75-240 from my SLR that should take longer shots if need be...

I admit I'm probably still a beginner. I wouldn't mind getting better, but I dunno if I want to go into photography as a part time job or keep it as a hobby.

Never said I was a good photographer. Hell, this was taken from inside the car with the windows up, so I got a damned reflection too. Heh.
But I guess the fence exhibits some distortion, as focal length was 18 here.

Does the Tamron, that 17-50, have any .... ill effects?

And here's that shot. (I never set passowrds so I can't delete that post. So, uhm, enjoy low light gargoyle... I think that was taken with, well probably has to be the 18-135 as thats teh only one to go down to 28 that I have.

Some of the landscape and sky shots looked fine. It was just the architectural shot(s) and the one of the fence that exhibited distortion. I guess I'll have to test a bit more with it to see how I totally feel about it....
