Hey, /p/, ready for another "What camera" thread?

My best friend is getting into photography, and in addition to getting an actually good camera to take normal photographs, she wants to play around with a toy camera. She was thinking about a Diana (don't worry, she's not going to pay $50 or whatever for it) but is there anything of similarly bad quality with normal manual controls instead of "sunny" and "cloudy" apertures at one shutter speed or whatever? I've found a few in 135, but is there something out there that does square format 120 (which is what she wants to use)?

"playing with the toy camera" doesnt match with 120 film.
its kinda hard to get nowadays, not to mention the prices and processing are higher than those in 135. most likely she will stop using her camera in 2months.
she should just get a fisheye instead..

or the russian sexy chick holga is always in store..

I thought Yashica made good TLRs?

I don't understand the desire for accurate manual controls and "bad quality" in the same camera. If you must, just get a normal camera and disassemble the lens, then put it back together after rubbing Vaseline on each element. The misalignments that will occur should help with the whole artsy bullshit effect.

But like, if you're going for the unpredictable nature of shit cameras, the last thing you'd want are predictable certain controls...

Get a shoebox and make a pinhole camera. Your photos will look like utter shit. She will be delighted. It will cost you next to nothing. Spend the spare money on booze.

They do, Fence just didn't read OP's post.
Well, except some of the TLRs. But they're just bad-bad.

I get what you're saying, but there's a difference between "unpredictable" and "unusable indoors," which is what these fixed f/11, 1/100th cameras would be even with 3200 film.

Like, the main 135 thing I found was something called a Smena 35 that would open up to f/4 and go down to 1/15th. Something like that.

oh, i read it. but he wanted manual controls, square crop, medium format.

yashica's basically the cheapest way to get there.

She's not just looking for cheap, she's looking for a junk camera to play around with.

If there's some TLR out there with all the mess in the results, that'd be perfect.

>she's looking for a junk camera to play around with
>a junk camera
>junk

Get a Sony.

/thread

Seriously though, you may as well make a pinhole camera if she wants junk and deliberately shitty photos.

dont forget the kiev medium formats.
cheap as fuck (bot mine for $30 with lens but overlapping frames is a very likely possibility.
Workaround, shoot one then shoot the lensecover

A pinhole is as different from this sort of thing as a view camera is different from a rangefinder.

>>279716

I looked at these, and they seem to just be shoddily built TLRs with a lens that's soft at wide apertures, but are otherwise normal. Am I wrong?

Not that that doesn't have its advantages (namely, past f/whatever she could use it as a real camera) but it's not what she's looking for.

>>279748

all she wants is junk as a toy to make bad photos though. how is any different?
>> Anonymous
Does she want unpredictable, or just plain bad?
>> Anonymous
"she" = the OP

so obvious
>> Anonymous
>>279749
If you're talking about the pinhole, working speed and available apertures make them suited to different subjects, just like a view camera and a rangefinder. If you're talking about the Lubitel, it seems to just be a mediocre TLR with bad build quality but decent image quality stopped down, and no problems except for a lack of sharpness wide open.

>>279757
Bad. She likes the weird results, she's not experienced enough in photography enough yet to explicitly want unpredictable shooting.

>>279761

No. I don't have any interest in doing this sort of thing, I like to shoot very straightforward, I don't even like using wides or shallow depth-of-field much. If I liked these I'd know what to tell her to get.

When I come to /p/ asking for convoluted recommendations for myself, I'll say so. Plus I honestly would expect to get flamed more for "Hey, does /p/ know a shit camera for gimmicky distortions for my newbie friend" than "Hey, does /p/ know a shit camera for gimmicky distortions for me?"

I don't think you have a best friends. Enjoy your lomo.

Lomo LC-A, Diana, Holga, Holga 35mm, Actionsampler, Frogeye, Pop-9, Oktomat, Fisheye, Fisheye2, Colorsplash, Colorsplash Flash, F-stop Bang, SuperSampler, Horizon 202, Seagull TLR, Smena 8M

Any of those will do.

In that case, OP, I have a shitty camera that may fit the bill. Passable (or passably shit, if you look at it the other way) three element 75/3.5 lens, B-200 speeds, and actual decent build quality. Shoots 6x6 or 645 if you feel like it.

Pic related. I'll give you contact info if you feel like buying (flash and grip not included).

How much are you asking for it?

Do you have anything scanned in from it?

Actually now I'm not so sure it makes sense to sell, because shipping is probably worth more than the camera. Where are you located?

I don't have any scans that really show its quality either because my scanner sucks. Here's the closest I can get to something decent - probably stopped down to f/8, on Fuji Fortia SP. It's a lot sharper under a loupe. Maybe too sharp even.

I was thinking about that. We're on the east coast of America. You're in Hong Kong, right?

Yeah, so never mind. You may want to shop for other scale focus folders though.
