image sizing... Anonymous
Hello, p.
I am running adobe photochop 7.
Is there a way to increase image size in it without significantly reducing image quality?
Thank you in advance for being the one civilized board on the chan.

I've been told a good way to increase an image is in increments, little by little. A few pixels or percent here and there.

However, truth be told, whenever you enlarge an image, there's a threshold where it'll just look crappy when enlarging. You are introducing detail that was otherwise NOT there. Take an icon, 16x16, and enlarge it to wallpaper size. It'll look crappy.

You can redo the image yourself, which may be impossible (say, if you want an image of a tank enlarged, and you are just, say, a high school student in boarding school with no access to tanks or military bases) or just time consuming (you have a rudimentary image that you can trace/vectorize and enlarge yourself-Vectors never lose detail).

So, it probably depends on how big you are increasing the image....

tl;dr: How big are you trying to enlarge the image (and whats the original size)?

I am hoping to enlarge a few pictures from an eMay ad, including the op one.
I have in the past used image size in photochop and increased the ppi count, then image size, then back down the ppi again. It seemed to limit loss, but was far from foolproof.
I thought there had to be a better way...

Why do you need more than a 640x480 picture of this for eBay? It's not like people are going to be using it for their wallpaper...

You can't really take a lower quality image (small) and make it high quality (large)... unless you're that guy standing behind a CIA tech in the movies ordering him to "enhance"
