Sure, it's great to be a gearhead for technical questions that your boss and/or customers might have. But you should also have a good background of what it all means in the end. Handing out a good photography tip every once in a while to a customer is definitely useful (i.e. when to stop down, decrease/increase shutter speed).
A photographer working at a camera store is like a tech geek at a Best Buy. Sure you get to work with something related to your interest. But it's only related. I would prefer being out and taking pictures.
