How hard is it to be a professional photographer? I'm planning to go to school for photojournalism in the fall and I keep having second thoughts.

Being a professional photographer is very easy. Being a professional photographer that makes enough money to put food on the table is very difficult.

I was meaning to ask about money. My dad has been working for a small local paper for about 40 years and his salary is $20,000.

God damnit, I've had this dream since I was 14 or 15. Not fair.

In order to make it big, you don't need to be just a great photographer, you need to be one of the best and you need to be known as one of the best.

Wedding photographers make big megabucks. If a rich couple wants a a photographer for their hopefully once in a lifetime wedding, they will seek out the best and only the best. It's a very competitive market.

>Wedding photographers make big megabucks

Some do. Most don't. Same as everything else.

Yeah, rephrase that to "The best wedding photographers" so it's more in-tune with the rest of my post.

if you really want to do it for the photography, then money won't matter. If you want to make a bunch of money, become a doctor. Decide which is more important- and you have your answer.

For most people, photography is better off as a hobby rather than a career. Get a better high paying job and buy yourself an arsenal of lenses and be happy.

Yep. You have better lense, more money to visit great places and job-photographers will be pissed because you make better pictures then they do.

Half true. In photography, marketing and business are far more important than photographic skill, as they will procure you far more work than sheer talent ever will. I've seen it time and time again, business skills account for 75% of any photo business and directly correlate to whether it fails or succeeds.

agreed.

It is a lot about how much you can get away with charging for the picture before someone calls bullshit.

Saw a guy at the arts fair just last week that did nothing amazing, just the same macro flowers and generic scenery, but he was charging upwards of 100 bucks for an 8x10 size print. He claimed to have been a full time pro for 22 years. We struck up a conversation.

He told me the secret is to never let anyone say your picture is worth less than 5x what it is really worth. Most people don't know the difference between a good picture and a great picture.

The purpose of College is to find out what you want to do in life. Take a course or two and change your major, you have the time to do so.

I started out as a Programming Major and ended up as an Electrical Engineer.
