Hey /p/, I'm in need of some advice on gear. I'm taking a photography class, so I'm looking for something affordable, yet can take a good shot. What do you recommend?

The instructor said it has to be able to use a SD card so he can load the pictures to his computer.

Also, Meant to post this pic, not that crapshit one.

Don't take this class. If the instructor can only operate SD cards, he isn't competent to teach anybody anything.

I'm pretty sure using a digital camera that just plugs in will work fine too.

You know, he might have an SD-card only reader.

That said, don't take the class, OP. Photography is one of those things that can be self-taught and is better off being so.

Agreed.

Sounds like you need a digital camera.

You will probably want one that you can adjust the settings manually. DOnt get a point and shoot.

You'll want to get a DSLR

Most importantly how much are you willing to spend?. I would think $500 min

Is this photography class at a college?
the type of memory card shouldn't really matter they make $10 card readers that will read any type of memory card. the teacher SHOULD know this.

He said memory card, so it could mean any. I'm noob at the terms, so yeah. Even if I don't take this class, whats a good one to get then?

A Canon XTI, they have been replaced recently with the XSI($800), so the XTI will cost you around 500.

i think the Nikon camera in that category is the D40.

probably best to check Ebay for the above mentioned cameras unless your willing to spend more.
