Nikon D40? Anonymous
I've seen this debate before but it was very mixed views, so I'll give it a try myself..

What does /p/ think of the Nikon D40? It seems perfect for my needs but is it worth dishing out the cash for..?

Is this your first camera, do you have any other experiences with (d)SLR's?

I've used various other DSLR's in the past, but normally cheap rubbish.. Looking to get something I could actualy keep for a while instead of getting bored :)

expandability and d40 can't be used in the same sentences

We are nontypical. The majority of D40 purchasers were never going to buy another lens, and of the remaining small percentage who were, they were going to get a 55-200 VR or 18-200 VR and that's it.

As such, leaving out the AF motor let them price the D40 kit slightly below the Rebel XT kit.

Sucks for those of you who shelled out $500+ for a camera without doing your appropriate due diligence and now find yourself with an SLR that won't autofocus with a large percentage of the current lens lineup, but I'd wager those people are thinking "Man, the D40 sucks. I'm going to buy a D80 as soon as I have enough money..." rather than "Man, the D40 sucks. I'm going to buy a Canon as soon as I have enough money..."
