I don't know how many people come here asking "Which camera do I buy lol?" but I'm one of those people now.

I've got a 500, possibly 700 USD limit, and have asked several people. Other than learning I don't know jack shit about camera terminology, I got a few different names:
- Fuji Film Fuji FinePix S9100 9.0 MP Digital Camera
- Canon Rebel XTi Digital SLR Camera
- Olympus SP-560UZ
- Panasonic DMC-FZ18K
- Canon Powershot S5 IS

Photo at left isn't supposed to be art; it's what I use my cameras for, which have been shitty personal cameras so far. I want to be able to take amazing, incredibly detailed pictures of bugs/animals/plants. But it also has to be good with motion (animals move).

tl;dr Best camera I can get for 500-700 USD that can do amazing close ups and good motion or scenery as well.

OP here, should probably also mention that this camera may take a fair amount of abuse.

If you want really nice close-ups i would go with a rebel XT (350D) and a Tamron 28-200. Maybe buy a half decent case for it if you are going to be beating this shit out of it.

The XTi is an excellent camera for the price, but the kit lens it comes with is mediocre.
>> heman
buy an old dslr with a 1:1 macro??? seems logical to me

I have been very happy with my rebel XT. However, the kit lens, as mentioned, is terrible. I would suggest buying the camera body only and adding the 18-55 canon IS lens. The IS lens in much better quality. I know you want to keep it under $700, but I would highly reccomend the 3 year damage plan on the camera for $70 more.

BH Photo has both
18-55 IS lens $174.95
Canon Rbel XTI body 519.95
3 year plan $70.

Do you have to buy directly from Canon to be able to buy the damage plan?

I recently got a Canon Rebel XT (350D) with strap, li-ion battery, and charger for $338 USD(plus shipping). It was only the body, so I went to amazon and brought a 18-55mm lens for about $70 USD(plus shipping).
BH photo is a great place, but a bit expensive for first time buyers like myself. I don't suggest buying kits, b/c you can get all the stuff I got for a lower price. It may have to take some searching, but I've saved about $400.

Also, if you buy a camera online from a place, i would also strongly recommend calling them first, and asking:
1)If they have the camera you want in stock.
2)If the camera's LCD screen comes in YOUR spoken language, (i.e. english)
This is because some camera stores that do business online import models from Japan or China, and sell them at a lower price, and can rip you off with a camera that you can't change the language on.

Indeed it is, but its not an export model and isnt certified for use in the EU either.

A firmware hack can probably change it but it doesnt bother me ofc (i wont be able to sell it however)

Is it cheaper to get one in another language? I can read Japanese pretty well, and I have relatives who are fluent in Chinese.

the cameras will be cheaper in asia

but then your warranty doesn't work back home
