Hello, /p/. Noobfag here. I am just getting interested in photography, and have a troubleshoot question. A co-worker let me borrow his Nikon D100. With no lens. I bought a Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 70~210mm 1:45~5.6 lens. It seems that when I try to take photos, I get mostly a black screen of nothing, unless I shoot directly at a light. I tried messing with the ISO settings and the f-stops but to no avail. What is going on? What can I do? Pardon my noobfaggotry, but any help would be appreciated. Did I buy the wrong lens? What should I buy if I did? In return, a picture taken by my cell-phone in Ginza, Tokyo when I was going home one day of a Coca-Cola truck going down Central Street.

Did you leave the lens cap on?

Can you see anything through the viewfinder?

What mode are you shooting in?

Did you try messing around with the shutter speed?

We could be a lot more helpful if you'd post one of the black screens of nothing rather than an unrelated cell-phone picture (although that's a pretty good cell phone picture)

Its japanese, what did you expect.

Japanese phones > 10 years tech > american ones

turn Exposure Time 1/1600 down to below 1/100 and try again
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>102714
try using something above f0

probably help.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>102716
What do you mean? f/0 is infinitely wide!

He just needs to use a quantum shutter speed to go with it.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>102714
Yeah, I think the 1/1600th of a second is your problem, unless you were shooting in bright sunlight. Try something slower.

thanks guys, now I'll look around to see how to do that... and I'll get back to ya :D

Here's another one, what you think is wrong with this one??

I'm curious as to why it's recording f0. Does that lens have an aperture ring? If so, if it isn't set to f22 it won't work right. I think.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>102723
Shutter speed is both too slow and too fast.

Too fast for enough exposure. Too slow for handholding. Get a tripod and set the exposure for a slower speed.

Also, rotate it 90 degrees widdershins.

I honestly have no idea. It's a Nikon Zoom-NIKKOR 70~210mm 1:45~5.6 lens. Don't all lenses have one?

>>102725
Gotcha, much appreciated.

set the cam to Av mode. Or set it to M and learn how exposure works, once you 'get it' it'll be very easy to use.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>102728
No, they don't all have aperture rings. Google says it's a D lens, so it should, I'm pretty sure you have to make sure it's set to the highest (smallest) aperture or it won't meter properly.
Then again, you've got it in manual, maybe you aren't reading the light meter right?

F-Number f/0.0
It's an MF lens, the body can't meter with this lens.
>>102730
There's an AI version of it, which is what he's got, I'm sure.

What's AV mode?

>>102730
I'll google light meter... but I'll probably ask later.

NVM got it answered -_-

Yeah, I shat bricks the first time I saw it.

AV mode is Aperture Priority mode. You set the f/stop, and the camera sets the shutter speed / ISO / everything else.

It's a half-way point between manual, and automatic.
Also, although I'm not trying to discourage conversations and questions on /p/, this seems something that could easily be resolved by some simple googling and reading the manual.

A simple google search gives me these (Nikon D100 manual filetype:pdf):

Do you even know what ISO settings and f/stops are?

Maybe you should take the lens off?
