This is my new camera.. Canon Digital Rebel XT, EF-S 18-55mm Lens. Getting a 75-300mm lens. UV Lens Filter is standard for now to protect lens. I'd like to take star scape shots. I have a remote shutter and tripod on the way, any tips?

It probably doubles as a plunger

OP Here, the lens hood does double as a plunger, as some of you have noticed.

Does anyone have a better suggestion? I have already been looking at buying a new one. This one just came free with a cleaning kit I got.

Canon's own hood for the 18-55? Though Canon's pricing on hoods is rage-inducing.

It's bokeh

Anyway, just bring extra batteries and get a wider lens. It'd be also best to take the shot from a height, I really mean height, to escape sky pollution because of its tendency to affect the color of the shot.

best idea ever.
the 100mm macro, the 85 1.8, the 50 1.4 all excellent

POOR MAN'S REMOTE SHUTTER: Just set the camera to take the picture after a few seconds. You know, like when you're taking a picture with family and you set the camera so you can be in the picture yourself?

Yeah, like that. Press buttan, get away from camera, it goes off remotely, enjoy pics.

works wonders for bulb

To be productive, for star/night photography you will need to put the camera into bulb and set the iso to 100 to avoid excessive noise. Now mount on tripod and mess around with exposure times untill you get it right. It would be also helpful to NOT be shooting this kind of stuff in an urban area thanks to light pollution and use a wide angle lens.
Oh yeah, you should of got a canon 70-200 f4 instead of that crappy 75-300
