Am I missing out on much by never using the various scene options on my DSLR?

I basically stick to M constantly, Av, Tv, B occasionally, but I haven't even touched upon the preset scene modes or "Auto Pict".

Are they basically what the sound like, pre-configured iso/shutter speed/aperture deals for each situation?

Scene modes are for people who don't know how to use M, Av, and Tv. You are not missing out on much.

I like the picture, btw.

Hell no. Scene modes are a pile of cunt scab, internal filters for fags who can't afford external filters.

Reassuring, I was just looking at the mode dial and thought "I hardly ever touch that".

The guy was actually semi-crazy, I think, dressed in full traditional Irish wear (I assume, it was an Irish pub) amidst all these younger people, and he was dancing and mouthing along to these bands, waving his arms about like he was giving a sermon.

Pity I cut his hand off on this shot.

If you know how to manipulate shutter speed and aperture then you don't need the presets. Although, some presets like the night portrait, you can't do in a single exposure yourself nearly as easily. NP is the one where it uses the flash but then fills in the background with a delayed exposure.

But for stuff like action sports, the preset just might go further than you want, so you'll be so fast that you risk over exposure or everything is frozen and you get no blur at all....

Can't you do something similar to NP with Bulb?

The flash goes off when you when you start the exposure, then you hold it down to fill in the back. Takes a bit of guesswork for time though.
