sup /p/,

I'm looking for input on what model camera I should get...I've done research but have gotten too many choices and want to get your input to see if it matches with what I've found.

My criteria is that it must be a compact digital camera that can shoot movies with sound. I will be using this camera mostly on Mt. Bike rides and overnight backpacking trips so sharp scenery pics are a must. The camera should be able to shoot in low-light settings such as sunsets/rises and twilight times. Since this will be my first and only camera for a while I also need it to be able to take decent photos of people as well.

Because I will be backpacking with it I'm leaning towards rechargeable AA's since they can be bought at any gas station/airport if needed...otherwise I'd need to buy another 1-2 batteries for the camera which will run easily more than $60-80...right?

The camera+batteries can't weigh more than 1 pound...not too sure if that's hard to make.. so like less than 500 grams? and the batterylife must be long because less batteries I have to carry on trips=less weight for my back!

I'm not too picky on nifty features and stuff however zooming during video would be a + as well as manual focus..my price range is under $400 if I can get a decent camera for that.

My biggest concern is picture quality...One camera that caught my eye is the Panasonic DMC-FZ7 but it's picture quality isn't top notch from what I've read and it doesn't use AA batteries...everything else about the camera I really like.

So what does /p/ have to say?

I'm the victim n I'm horrible at acting...so much for a frightened face..lost the hair now so that might help w/ facial expressions but w/e

This is some of the sort of stuff that I would take pictures of (this was his camera) and some stunts on the bike trails too...I'd say 50/20/20 Landscape, action shots, people

OP here... going to bed now but I'll check back in the morning if I have time.

Another note to take into consideration is that the camera should be durable to withstand a slight beating. I am very careful with my stuff and especially electronics however something is bound to hit the camera on a hiking trip eventually...waterresistant is a +

oh and the "people" I'll be taking pictures of is mostly my girlfriend...nothing nude [yet] but portraits and such

1. compact cameras don't have good video.
2. only the cheaper models use AA batteries.
3. cheaper models aren't made to be durable.

Get a Powershot A-series and try not to cry too much if it breaks.

1. I've seen video from point n shoot cameras and know the quality of them...I'd just like that feature to be handy

2. at what price range do cameras typically go from AA to battery packs?

3. I'm not necessarily looking for something to be classified as "durable" but a camera that feels sturdy and not about to break in your hands

I'll look into the Powershot A series. Thanks for your input

another vote for the powershot A series. I took an old a60 climbing with me for years and it survived several 20+ foot falls. it looks like hell now but it still takes some pretty nice photos.

i use a panasonic FZ18, i've read the FZ7 has slightly better picture quality, but FZ18 has hueg zoom. Theyre pretty much the same camera though.

Pics are extremely fucking noisy coming out of my FZ18, theyre perfectly acceptable once you resize them, and a quick trip through some RAW processing can bring out some niceness, but at 100% it tends to be nasty, which is kinda irritating, but i dont really know if thats an exception to the rule.

I havent really used mine for much beyond macro since ive been house bound doing coursework since i got it,flashless fly related.

Yea the choice was pretty hard between the panasonic and the canon A series but I am going to get a Powershot A570 IS...what won me over was the AA/NiMH batteries and the mass of good reviews on photography sites.

Maybe in the future I'll get the FZ7.

Seems like the older cameras are the durable ones..reminds me of the classic gameboy...as a kid I kicked that out of our SUV too many times to count and it survived the foot and a half drop to concrete..

I'll post a report when I get the camera.

Thanks /p/
