if you have manual controls use a smaller aperture for more depth of field =P

Use more dramatic lighting, Build a lightbox and redirect your flash around it (tinfoil cleverly fashioned) Or get powerfull lights / a tripod and build a softbox / lightbox.

Find interesting backgrounds / locations to shoot, And always zoom in as much as possible

make sure you never use digital zoom though because it just lowers the quality of your image

But larger apertures are easier to learn with. I'd recommend starting with larger aperture until you get a feel for manually adjusting your camera's focus.

You have it backwards, a Larger aperture is a smaller number. If your going to use Fstop numbers, Call it a higher F stop, rather than a LArger aperture, Because that actually means the aperture opens WIDER (aka larger)
