My general viewing of images like this tends to consist of two categories, with significant overlap.

Hot and/or Sexy.
Aesthetically pleasing.

This makes me expect the above categories. Then...I am betrayed.

Dude, your grandmother looks like she's gonna fucking murder someone.

In other words, awesome picture.

Is the lighting really appropriate for a little old lady?

it was in our living room, and it was the light coming in from the blinds. haha. not purposefully.

so i mean, what do you think? you don't think the lighting is appropriate for an older woman?

Is that an old lady or a mountain?

Protip: with very rare exceptions, sidelighting is never acceptable for women in general. It accentuates skin texture and creates high contrast like you see in your photo.

Sidelighting works great on men (especially old men with creases in their face and leathery skin), and it can be acceptable to show some basic form of a nude woman, but you need to way underexpose to get a skin tonality that won't get you smacked.

What do you suggest for lighting females then? Straight on light like a ring light?

Diffuse lighting. A softbox from central left with a reflector to the right, maybe? Or just shoot in sunlight with a reflector below to fill shadows.

I think it is beautiful and unique portrait. Your Grandmother should be honored.
