How are the Minolta Maxxum 1.7 Prime lenses? I'm getting sick of the low-light performance of the sony kit lens my a200 shipped with, will 3.5 to 1.7 be a night and day difference in regards to flexibility in lighting?

they are the least sharp 50mm in that mount, at least my copy is.

id say its good from f5.6 or so, not great.

try and find the macro f3.5 or f2.8, they are much much sharper.

Buy it and use it and learn what it can do. A cheap 50mm like that is a classic for everyone to learn on. IT will give you some options you didn't have before and you'll certainly notice it in the resulting images when you experiment.

To be honest I think you should do some reading on what these numbers you are quoting mean, both in theory and in the real world. If you understood them then you wouldn't need to ask such questions! Get the lens though and good luck.

If you're looking for examples and reports on what the lens is like then dpreview and flickr will have endless amounts of them. Just search for the right brand and equipment names.

fffff

50/1.7 is awesome, bit long for normal use but fucking awesome wide open. Also still should be cheap but since sony only make the 1.4 its not as easy to get as it used to be.
>> SAGE
if you want good performance read strobist. the sony flash system is very very flexible with biult in wireless etc
>> SAGE
you should read strobist more as well

OP here, whats a good non-rape price then for those?
>> SAGE
id pay no more than $220 for a f2.8 more for the f3.5 due to its rarity.

That and check out Google, Keh.com, eBay and compare prices over a few days. That way you'll see the going rate at that time.

the f1.4 version is a bit better, nothing special compared to the macro versions though. (theres a reason the macro versions cost more new)

the sigma 50/1.4 is very very sharp, but it doesnt render colors as nice, they will look flatter. i dont know why...

i got 40year old super-takumar 50/1.4 instead.
its on m42 mount so u will need m42 to MAF adapter
pros of it are:
+low cost
+sharp like fuck vs kit lens
+its fucking classic
+glass&metal, nice focus ring

cons:
-u got to operate in full manual mode, unless u buy more expensive m42 maf adapter with chip. focusing stays manual, but u will hear the beep when u get focus
-most of em are yellowed a bit, becouse of radioactive thorium in it, still its just a matter of tuning it in ps.

example str8 from a200 [with resizing in ps only] at 1.4
can get ya comparision vs kit lens. its night and day difference in sharpness

Sigma 50mm f1.4 is more expensive, but superior.

you can fix the yellowing to some degree by leaving the lens out in bright sun with the lens caps off, look it up online

yeah. its winter tho so would take months, gonna w8 till summer

OP: It means it's able to get you a faster shutter speed in the same light at the same ISO. It isn't nescesarily more flexible, considering f/1.7 doesn't have much depth of field. Depending on your style and what you're trying to do, you might not want to take it much below f/3.5. Or maybe you do want to use absolutely minimal depth of field.

>A cheap 50mm like that is a classic for everyone to learn on
On film, not on digital. Come on. 75mm equivalent is good for some portraits (IMO ~85-90mm is much better, though) and shooting concerts, speeches, etc., but it's not the thing it was on film at all. That's a 35, or again IMO, even better a 28.

>>295087
Resolution per se isn't really all that important. While I wouldn't want to use that as my main fifty- I like sharpness- it seems to have a really smooth rendering that would be great for some styles/subjects. And no, I don't just mean it's soft, I mean that combined with how it handles the tones, etc.

>>295652
This, though, is probably the thing to get. There's better fifties, but none for a price like this. The version marked "Super-Multi-Coated" is supposedly the best, and IIRC doesn't have the radioactive element.

I've heard wonders of minolta's macros, but the 1.7's price can't be beaten: got one for 80 euros, loving it since then. average wide open, get sharper by f2, perfect form f4/5.6. wonderful for portraits in low light, works well with super steady shot.
pic related.
