Hokai, so my friend wants me to shoot her wedding cause I have a fancy camera, and I'd like the experience. I am not a professional, but I don't suck at it either. I just like photography as a hobby.
The wedding is gonna be outside by some falls.
I'm used to shooting candind shots.

Who's got suggestions?

Tell him or her that having a fancy camera doesn't mean you can take photographs at a wedding. It's different. Though yes, candid shots are good at a wedding. You will also probably be expected to do other shots as well. Posed shots of bridesmaids with bride or huge group shots of everyone being together. If you are the main photographer, then I probably would decline. If you are working in conjunction with a professional photographer, then it'd be good practice.

If you are going to take this on in any degree, I would suggest you borrow a lot of picture books and find out what wedding pictures really entails. Goals are to beautify the bride of course and express the joy of everyone involved. Personally, this is a very overwhelming task for me, since I normally take pictures of landscapes and such.

Heh. I'm in the same situation. I made her promise not to get pissed off at me if I screw something up.

This reply is in no way helpful.

That was one of the things discussed also for me.

Don't.
Make sure she hires someone and then talk to them beforehand because, depending on the person, they might get pissy.
Weddings are a once in a lifetime event (even though most people have two or three of them lol) and you don't want to lose a friend or have her be a bitch forever.

I've had friends try to get me to do wedding photography, too. I've refused unless i was only a secondary photographer. Having the pressure of missing out on lovely photo's of someones' wedding day is just not something I can do. I have done one hot air balloon wedding- because it was in the hot air balloon- and believed the photographs to come out alright, but in general for her paying me 100 bucks to do the whole thing, (she's rich; if she wants she can hire another photographer and do another one), I never have the guyts to do another wedding.

Unless you're a secondary photographer, I wouldn't do it.

The best wedding photos are the ones that arent at all formal.

Just keep your camera out at all times, and snap all the nice little moments, the bride and groom will love you for it.

This is the site that made me decide to say yes to the wedding photo request I got. I want to try to take pictures like this.

Also, she assured me that she doesn't expect to ever actually *look* at the pictures any time in her life after the first look through.

(Sadly, she said no to my offer to photograph the honeymoon as well. She's a hot redhead)

Turns out the ceromony is going to be very informal. Only 5-10 minutes long. Very small, and I will be shooting the entire day. While they are getting ready etc...

I have also agreed to shoot the hike up to the falls with her family before the wedding. That should be fun.

I have had the word of a professional that he'll help me shoot it. I'm going to take him up on it. It will be nice to have someone else there for advice.

I'm just concerned about the shortness of it. I have 10 minutes to get as many photos as possible. She doesn't want to do any of the poses with mother/father/bridesmaids, just one of her and the hubby.

Overall, it doesn't seem like she is expecting a whole lot. It seems quite simple.

Ten minutes?

Rent a 1ds mkIII, spray and pray. Et voila, 6000 pictures of the special day. ;)

You can also take pictures outside of the actual ceremony can't you? It's all part of the ritual. People getting dressed and interacting with each other before it start officially. Then there will be time after with the celebration and all. You won't find too much creative flexibility within 10 minutes, so focus on the times before and after where you can. But I would make sure that the bride really just expects some candids and understands the possibility of bad candids as well due to the relative short amount of time. If she gets what she wants, then everyone will be happy. She gets her pictures and you get some added experience.
