So this is a new superzoom with pretty good specs and features that should make people think twice if they're eyeing the Panasonic FZ-18, Canon S5 or Nikon P80.

It costs more than those, $750 but handles and performs much better than the other 3.

# 14.3X optical zoom (28-400mm equivalent)
# 2/3" sensor with 11.1 million effective pixels
# Eighth generation Super CCD HR sensor
# 2.5" tiltable LCD screen
# RAW

It also does film simulation like the Fuji S3 and S5. With a Provia and Velvia mode.

Noise level compares favorably against the Nikon D60 all the way up to ISO 1600.

Should be a good choice for those who don't want a DSLR.

This is 28mm equiv.

And at the longest, 400mm equiv.

Which is just mind boggling.

According to DP Review it has shittastic CA, and the lens (f/5.3 at the far end) seems kinda slow. Now, it might stay at f/2.8 up until it hits there, but somehow I think it probably gets slow fast.

In fact, I think I see some CA on the roof of the building in the 400mm shot.

I think that might be part of the roof.

But the "cons" are run of the mill for this category.

Still a class above the rest but it's more expensive.

Damn, a 2/3" superCCD that nearly matches a regular sensor four times the size in terms of noise, and mops the floor with other 2/3" sensors like in Canon G9.

I wonder what this technology can do if applied to APS- or 4/3"-sized sensors. So far Fuji's DSLRs were pretty average at high ISOs.

Why so expensive? For $750, you can get an Olympus twin lens kit (which covers 28-300mm) and still have money left to buy an extra 55-200 sigma in case you absolutely need that 400mm reach.

G9's got a 1/1.7" sensor, not a 2/3"

I looked at the dpreview picture compros and I'm sorry, the Oly E510 just absolutely slaughters this at any ISO.

The more superzooms I see, the more fond I become of my S5 - while it's no DSLR, it was at least priced as a compact to match.

sounds like a butthurt s5 owner who can't handle that the fuji is better
