though i just use medium format for the photos i actually like to take, it'd be nice to get a dslr and maybe make some money off of some bands since i know how to use one and take better photos than asshole band photographers.

so i have been taking photos with an olympus om-2 since i was 10. i only ever use a 28mm lens. i either use hp5 or portra 160nc.

i don't WANT anything wider or ANYTHING longer. i know what i like to use.

what dslr/lens combo does /p/ think i should get to match my needs?

you might.. want to branch out. there's a whole world of lenses out there with weird and exotic focal lengths.

but, whatever. all you need to know is the effective multiplier of your desired dslr's crop sensor.

olympus is a 2x crop, so whatever lens you put on there is effectively twice as long. you'd need a 14mm lens to get the same width as your 28.

nikon is a 1.5 crop, canon has a 1.6 (ef-s mount) and 1.3 (eos), pentax is 1.53, sony is 1.5.

you could also get a full frame dslr and not have to worry about conversion.

Nikon D200 and either an 18mm f/3.5 AIS, 20mm f/2.8 AIS, 18mm f/2.8 AF-D, or 20mm f/2.8 AF-D.

Since you're probably going to make money off of it, and you're not a typical hobyist (since the medium format system), i'm assuming you'll pay a decent amount. You'd definately want a canon 5d or 1ds series and there are a couple lens choices you could go with.

ef 28mm 1.8
There is no L lens in the 28mm range but you could go with a
ef 35mm 1.4L
or a
ef 24mm 1.4L

Assuming 5d and 28mm 1.8 you're looking at around 3k new

second.
Or a D300. And Ai-s if you dont mind MF or AF-D if you want AF.
I've used the 20mm f/2.8 AF-D on my F5 and its fantastic.

why are you nikonfags recommending a cheap crop sensor dslr to a person who has been taking medium format photos for years? It's pretty obvious that he should go for at least full frame 35mm.

Then D3 with AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D, happy?

What medium format system do you use? If you were to make money off this camera and you're in love with medium format, then i suggest you get a medium format digital back.

The mamiya zd digital back sells for around 7k, it's about the price of a 1ds III, but if you have a mamiya system, it's a great option. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/502707-REG/Mamiya_310_110_ZD_Digital_Camera_Back.html

Why would he get that over a 5d 28mm 1.8mm combo that's less than half the price?

>canon has a 1.6 (ef-s mount) and 1.3 (eos)
Small correction:
1.3x crop on the 1D, 1D Mk II, and 1D Mk III
1.0x crop on the 1Ds, 1Ds Mk II, 1Ds Mk III, and 5D
1.6x crop on the Rebel (EOS 300D), Rebel XT (EOS 350D) , Rebel XTi (EOS 400D), Rebel XSi (EOS 450D), EOS 20D, EOS 30D, EOS 40D
1.6x crop that annoyingly can't use EF-S lenses on the EOS D30, D60, and 10D

(The way you wrote it made it sound like the "EOS 20D" should have a 1.3x crop)

Get mamiya and post pics here for /p/ porn!

you know just because you have been taking photos for years doesnt automatically mean you have to get full frame. there are a lot of people who like the smaller cameras better.

A serious photographer would get serious equipment, that's all i'm trying to say.

Op also mentioned that he liked medium format, if he likes larger formats, might as well get the largest 35mm dslr format.

OP: Is any variance from 28mm okay? If so, 17-18mm will work on an APS-C sensor, or a 21mm on a 1D Mk. whatever. Almost exactly the same FoV. There's so many options here you'll just have to try out camera bodies and see which one handles the best for you.

If you do want exactly 28mm your best choices are:

Nikon D3, with either a 28/2 or, if you can afford it, the 28/1.4.
Canon 5D with 28/1.8.

IMO, the Nikkors are both better lenses (go find some sample photographs and decide for yourself, though), but the Canon set-up will be much less bulky and expensive.

>>141479
Tons of great photographers have stuck to a small set or one focal length. Cartier-Bresson used a 50mm for almost everything- I've heard he would very rarely switch to a wide angle on landscapes- and Winogrand (who shot the OP pic) used a 28mm exclusively. Most great photographers have used very simple equipment, and for good reason: they know it and it doesn't get in their way.

So anyone shooting Nikon until the D3 wasn't a serious photographer because his D2Xs wasn't full-frame?

Also, he said he uses an Olympus OM-2. That's 135 film. He's obviously not a MF snob.

>So anyone shooting Nikon until the D3 wasn't a serious photographer because his D2Xs wasn't full-frame?
No, because the D2Xs was the top of the line body before the D3. Now, the top end is the D3. And going to a 35mm size is already a big drop from medium format, so I'm guessing the guy to whom you're replying suspected that the OP might not be happy with another drop down to DX-size.

>Also, he said he uses an Olympus OM-2. That's 135 film. He's obviously not a MF snob.
Maybe not an MF snob, but an MF preference. I.e., if you'd read the OP post more carefully, you might have noticed this line:
>i just use medium format for the photos i actually like to take

You're a fucking idiot.

I'm sure you know that whole thing about 36x24mm digital sensors replacing medium format and APS-C digital sensors replacing 135 film. So it's not really a step down in terms of technical image quality; especially at high ISOs, it's a step up.

And since he specified a 28mm FoV and I don't think there's any 28mm medium format lenses, I think he's looking for a digital augmentation of his 35mm gear. Assuming he doesn't use a flash, it would be sort of hard to shoot concerts with medium format, since most of the lenses are pretty slow. Not that there aren't fast medium format lenses out there, but I'm working on assumptions here.

I meant more in terms of depth of field and such than in pure image quality. In skilled enough hands, an APS-C sensor can beat the quality of medium format in less-skilled hands.
