Dear /p/..

since the finacial market has gone down the drain (Grandparents have lost $500,000 in the past few weeks alone), Australian dollar has drop by ~40c

Calculating my fundings i was going to be able to buy the nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR next month.. but the price has risen by +$600 AUD..

so i was thinking, either get the nikon 105mm f/2.8 micro for some nice macro, or the 80-200mm f/2.8

Both of the previous lenses stated above are around the $1000 mark..

have you had any first hand experiance or catastrophes with these lenses! Please help!

Thanks
Josh

Op here..

the 500k loss was nothing to do with the market, my grandparents got hooked on meth

to lose $500,000 means they would have had to have about 2.5 million (minimum) in Equity markets alone.

Old people do not risk much, so I have a feeling they had only mutual funds and fixed investments, and to lose 500,000 in mutual funds may be possible, but then they would probably need to have even MORE money invested because they haven't dropped 20% in the last 2 weeks...

Maybe when he says they lost it he means they *lost* it. Old people are always misplacing things.

Nothing wrong with the 80-200, I had one a while back and intend on buying another one soon, since I can't justify the extra 700 or so for the VR. I liked it, and AF is fast enough if you've got a good body. (I.E., it's slow as shit on a D50, but nearly as fast as an AF-S on my D2 or my F100, and I suspect the D300/700 probably AFs as fast as the F100) If you can find a nice second-hand AF-S 80-200, it's worth looking into, as it's a great lens, slightly faster and sharper than the 80-200, but that fact has made used ones go for a similar price to the 80-200.

Come to think of it, though, used prices probably won't go up as fast as the prices on brand new ones, it might be a lot cheaper to go used for a month or two, until things sorta stabilize.
