90% of the time i turn the flash around backwards and bounce it off the wall (or corner, which is even better). it's the only way to get directional light with a bounced flash, and it has a decently even illumination across the whole room. you're basically creating a massive 6 foot wide parabolic reflector positioned 10 feet behind the camera.

the big problem with this is that you cut the power of your flash by 200 to 400%, which can be a problem at 20 feet or more. if your walls are painted, you'll also get a color cast. of course, that's only really a problem if you're using film or don't know how to set white balance in shoop.

you can set the angle to 60-70 degrees and tape a white card, but this is only for close range. Also you can use an omnibounce, but again, range is an issue.

Best thing i found from another photographer is to turn the flash head 180 degrees and pull the bounce card up so it's completely vertical but facing towards you instead of the regualr way.

What that does aside from blind everyone behind you when you shoot is distribute the light forwards more evenly as the bounce card is forward.
