What do I need in order to take good night shots without a tripod? Is autofocus a possibility at night?

Even with a tripod, I wouldn't be able to get a picture like that.

why wouldnt you?

just make sure you letterbox every picture you take. I automatically validates it as a cinematic masterpiece.

read the exif, 1/180 sec shutter at f/1.8 and ISO 100.

its pretty obvious that was taken without a tripod.

yep.

Also, if it is dark enough to loose auto focus, you definitely won't be hand holding. But if you do decide to lug a tripod, bring a laser pointer with it. Just put a dot on your subject and auto focus is back without screwing up the metering.

In other words, OP, you need to use a higher ISO to achieve tripodless photographs in a dark setting. It's nice to carry around a small bipod, though.

I learned a lot about keeping my body as immobile as possible from match rifle shooting.

Tripods are heavy and my child-like body can barely hold a three pound camera and lens.
