So I just got a few Rolls of Velvia 50 (E-6 Slide Film, and 30 rolls actually) So, what can I come to expect from it? I've never used slide film before (Let alone Color film) So I'm not sure what to expect (other than high saturation and slow shutter speeds! (ISO 50 is going to be tough to get used to) Luckily my slowest film lenses are f2.8 So I have the equipment.

Picture unrelated as it was taken with my D50 (and not very good because of the boring lighting) but I was a tourist and couldn't stick around till "magic hour"

Camera I'm using is an N80, Not sure how accurate its metering is, but for now i'll assume it is accurate!

Are you using the Velvia 50 or 100 speed? I use velvia and I have an n80. Both are made of win. I'd recommend you keep it in "a" mode and choose the f-stop yourself

No sorry, thats the only shot I took

50 (as I posted), I usually stick to A and balance the shutter speed to what I think I can handhold, Just took 3 pics to kind of "test" how It handles The Flash and Natural light, Going to do some indoor testing with my f1.8 lenses soon, Then the last half of the roll I'll really start to try for serious shots. Skin tones is the big IF, as i've heard they usually come out quite red.

Do you have any sample pics?

Sure, but you need more you can look at my flickr (excuse the bad scans, they were done very quickly, and I ran out of canned air to be able to clean with). Nothing's photoshopped, everything's right off the slide.

www.flickr.com/photos/liskarialeman

everything on there was taken with velvia 50 or 100, with a few that was taken with provia 100.

When you want more intense color, i'd highly recommend pushing it up a stop to 100 for a few rolls. Just keep them seperate so you can make your developing lab aware.

As for the people question.. i can't answer that. I never take photos of people.

I've seen pictures with people, they look sunburnt. Just say no.

Awesome thats exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for, Didn't know about the 1 stop push processing, Maybe If I do people a one stop pull Would dull the colors a bit?

Was that butterfly pic taken with a flash?
Also what scanner do you use? and how do you like it? I need one and the Epson 4490 is cheap and has slide and negative holders. (So i've been looking at that)

The best thing you can do is play. Velvia is there to bring out the color, so look for color. If you dont' already have a polarizing filter on the end of your lens, you need one. Then again, I love to filter most of my pictures as much as I can.

Yes, it was taken with a flash on a cloudy day. I forgot i had it turned way down, and it came out like that.

I'm unfortuantely not sure about the people still. I shoot nature, and I shoot specifically for the color play.

I've got a Nikon coolscan 5000. It works just wonderfully :D

as an add on note, I wouldn't recommend doing portrait photography with Velvia. probably want digital or med. format for that

well holy crap your scanner costs more than my most expensive lens :), I think i'll stick with the Epson 4490 for now.

Also I lucked out and got some crazy red skies and rain fallin on the other side of the lake, So I took 3 pics (one over one under and one accurate metering) to see how the film responds.

Pic taken with my Digital after the good lighting was gone (testing fill flash)

Oohhh, lovely lighting here. I like it.

I scan a LOT of photos; but a lot of my camera equipment was gotten new at a below retail price (close friend owns a camera store) or given to me as a gift by family, like my dad or mom (that includes my scanner).

As long as you are able to scan with a decent quality and not worry about your scanner scratching your transparencies, you'll be fine.

Wow...this is one of your cleanest scans yet! The color detail is so vivid, I could almost touch it.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j

Heh, i had a can of compressed air for that one. Makes it much easier than having to blow on the slides. ;)
>> elf_man
Like with old nintendo cartridges, although using canned air would go against all the sacred rituals.
>>54944
Are you sure you want that scanner? It sounds like the software sucks.

I've shot miles of velvia and can say you're in for a treat if you haven't used it before. The grain structure and color are as good as old-school kodachrome. It can be pushed to 125+ (if anyone still does that) and holds up fine. At the same time, don't be afraid to expose it for shadows. You won't blow the highlights.

>>55088

Awesome. I never considered pushing it that much. Have any samples? I normally push the 50 to 100, and leave the 100 at 100.

Sadly, I don't.
I made a deal with my ex business partner...she got all the film, equipment, contracts, prints and supplies. I got my freedom from the miserable bitch.

All considered, I think I got the better end of the deal.

Very good point. You can always go out and buy more if you needed. ;) Women are evil

No i'm not sure at all! But its relatively cheap, And when I start getting slides back I want to digitize them for possible printing (up to 12x18)

Software usually isn't a big deal breaker for me though, All i want is a good quality scan with ICE, and a high enough DPI to get about 2000x3000 images for a slide.
