Hey guys. I'll be honest in saying I haven't really ever been on this board, but I figure that you guys can help. I apologize before-hand if it's a stupid question.

First, I love photography. I have never really taken any classes, so it's all just amateur stuff that I learn as I go. I've been using my father's camera that he let me borrow a long time back which is, more or less, an overly expensive but relatively poor-quality digital camera that hooked him simply because it had a high price tag. It's some kind of a panasonic brand.

Well, my brother is getting me a brand new camera for christmas and wanted to know which one (literally any one I want). I thought that the Nikon D20 was a good one, but I might be wrong. I was curious what you guys recommend. A very good camera that will last and be high quality.

Please and thank you.

In b4 "newfag" or anything like that. I'm an amateur and I know it.

Picture unrelated: on my laptop and do not have any of my photos at the moment.

Or possibly the Canon EOS 5D Mk II, if it's out in time. Depends if you prefer Nikon or Canon.

Holy fuck those are complicated cameras for a beginner, I would say get a D90 or D300 with a lens.

OP:

Hmmm. I've been looking at different stuff, and I had been thinking the Nikon d200...But the EOS 5D looks REALLY good as well as the Nikon d90! I definitely want something with a megapixel count...so both of those are really good.

Something else...I'm a HUGE fan of black and white shots and shots using a lot of shadow...or dark with flames for lighting. Would I need to alter my searches a little or will any of those cameras (d200, d90, or EOS 5d) work for it?

I'm not OP but I'm essentially in the same boat:
just got a decent job and want to upgrade from my Fuji pocket cam.

I'm a good amatuer and thinking about going pro part time.

Where does /p/ shop for cameras online?

Would it happen to be a Finepix f10? *want* I lost mine in a snowfield in France.

The Sony A350 and A700 are worth a look.

Sony are building with Konica Minolta Heritage, still using CF (yay oldschool), Steadyshot Inside (in camera stabilisation instead of buying expensive VR/IS lenses - which also means you get stabilisation benefits on things like Macro Lenses and f1.4 lenses that wouldn't have VR or IS options through Canon or Nikon. Also, Tiltable Live View screen, dual cards CF + MSProDuo on the A700.

Uses the a-mount so you can use older KM Lenses, and Carl Zeiss lenses are available too.

The only downside is that you have pretentious Nikonfags and Canonfags insisting that it's not a 'real' SLR.

why´s that?

oh and yeah, the 300/350 are excellent cameras if you want to switch from bridge to dslr, just one thing they lag behind the canon/nikkon cams: noise above iso400

Lots of noise, smallest viewfinders ever, ergonomics and features designed to appeal to P&S owners, uber-shitty kit lenses. Basically it's the same fail as the G1 in the thread below, only in a much bigger body.

FUCK THE WORLD IS ENDING IMAGES HAVE NOISE IN THEM

>FUCK THE WORLD IS ENDING IMAGES HAVE NOISE IN THEM

no, the deal is that noise gets really annyoing from iso400/800 on, and especially from iso800 the inbuilt noise-red blurrs the image very very much

>Lots of noise, smallest viewfinders ever, ergonomics and features designed to appeal to P&S owners, uber-shitty kit lenses. Basically it's the same fail as the G1 in the thread below, only in a much bigger body.

1) noise above iso400 is an issue, though if you shoot raw just use neat image, helps a-lot
2) view-finders in that class are all not that big + the superb live-view more than compensates the view-finder -- oh yeah please go ahead and cry that the live-view is just a gimmick and has no real use - just because nikkon and canon are to retarded to make a live-view system that doesnt take 3 freaking seconds to focus

3) kit-lenses are kit-lenses. they´re not much worse or better than any of the other kit-lenses at that price-range

4) ergonomics are superb, the camera is very easy to use but still offers every setting there is necesseray and some more.

oh, and features like build-in image stabilization appeal to p&s owners only? enjoy paying extra for your lenses faggot

furthermore, the image-quality with lower-iso modes is equal if not better than canon/nikkon (of course, in that price/product range), but dont take my word for it, just google it.

Oh yeah, let's process everything with neatimage.

>2) view-finders in that class are all not that big
A350 has viewfinder smaller than most olympus cameras. 'Nuff said.

>the superb live-view more than compensates the view-finder
Enjoy not seeing the screen on sunny days and no magnification. At least live view on other cameras can be used for tripod work.

>3) kit-lenses are kit-lenses. they´re not much worse or better than any of the other kit-lenses
Oh, so CAs as wide as my finger don't count, eh? This camera is worse than olympus in most aspects, which is a real achievement in epic fail.

>4) ergonomics are superb,
Oh yeah, like the digital teleconverter button.

Check out Panasonic's Lumix line. Get the lx3 or a used lx2. There are some good deals on ebay.
