taking pics in public? Anonymous
Do you still take pictures out in public? Also downtown and close to large buildings and facilities?

If you do, has it got more difficult lately? Do the rented cops and other paranoid people harass you much? Or is it back to normal and relaxed again?

Depends on the city. I take pictures of random people in the streets in cities like Rotterdam or Amsterdam, but a small city like where I live, I do not. I did it once, and even people from miles away walked up to me and went aggressive. In Amsterdam or Rotterdam I can just point a 260mm tele in the direction of one single person, without much trouble.

I went to Tybee Island, Georgia, yesterday and people shot.

No body gave me any trouble.

Depends on what you're doing and where you are.

If you make any attempt to photograph any child in any situation, you can expect to be harassed. Before anyone makes any typical comments about paedophiles, this << is the photo I was taking.

If you go near anything like an airport or oil/gas terminal, you can expect to be talking to police/armed guards in a short space of time.

I even got thrown out of a multi-storey car park for taking photos from the roof.

God I hate people.

My favourite is when rent-a-cops or even real police walk up to you and ask you what you're doing. You're standing there, with a camera the size of a microwave oven, a tripod, and sometimes another camera dangling around your neck. What in the great blue dammit do you think I'm doing here?!?!

I like to respond as follows:

"Hey there. So what are you doing here today?"
"Bowling."

That seems to get the best reactions from people.

If you are in a spot with kids people will give you shit, almost guaranteed. This is true even if it is quite clear you're not taking photos of their goddamn kids.

Otherwise in my experiences no one really cares. You get stuff from the occasional rent a cop who doesn't want you photographing company stuff.

o

and for the love god never take your camera anywhere near walmart

In the past ive noticed that people here in the UK react if they see anyone hold up a black box to their eyes to take a photo~ usually met with some aggression.

But much like one of the previous posters in amsterdam i took a lot of photographs as people walked by and noone bothered me.

It could be which country you're in, saying that in England a few years back when i had a head of neon red dyed hair~ i got a bit freaked out when a middleaged gentleman on the otherside of the platform blatently started taking photographs of me when i was on the platform, alone.

I think it depends on the situation/looks of the person.

With the whole vogue culture of "EVERYONE IS A PAEDOPHILE!" thats going on, im not suprised people get overly aggressive at the sight of an SLR.

Where I live, I'm more likely to be harassed by mentally-ill people than rented cops or soccer moms - so far so good since I don't even get harassed by mentally-ill people.

I had taken pictures of children and aeroplanes before, most of which /p/ have seen. No trouble at all, and the aeroplane photos were all taken five meters from the runway/airport fence.

No trouble from the police nor from the people from the other side of the fence. Most of my troubles are from rabid mall security personnel.
