One question: Should I buy a Canon G9, OR save some money, get real and buy a 40D ?

This pictures is from dpreview's site, review of d40, I don't think the picture quality is that good its little bit grainy, no focus on the bricks.. this is the best to expect from a 40d? If it is.. how bad would a g9 perform?

Depends on what you want to shoot. For most people, the 40D. That is, chances are 99% unless you know why you need the G9 over the 40D, you should get the 40D.

You won't get better image quality from the G9. In fact, you'll get noticably worse in low light.

I think that if you're wondering if you should get a high end point and shoot versus a dSLR, then you have to re-think your priorities. A SLR will definitely provide you with higher quality images and more flexibility. But you may need to invest a lot more to take advantage of these. Just make sure that you also have a flexible budget for your shiny new dSLR as well.

If you want to simply take pictures and have photography as a small hobby, then buy a p&s but not an overly expensive one like the G9. In either case, if you have some hesitation that you cannot invest the TIME to take pictures, then go for the p&s and cut your losses.

The d40 and the 40d are completely different models from different makers with the 40d being much more expensive. (I'm not too sure if you realized the price differential yet.) It's like comparing apples and oranges. Yes, the quality will be different since they are different cameras. But this can also be said about cameras made by the same maker as well. Never assume one camera has the same quality as another especially with SLRs since the lens is another factor as well.

get a canon xt

Either a Canon 40D or a Nikon D40 will give much better image quality than a G9, especially in low light.

Whats the point in only reccomending nikon or canon, esp from you?

I know the sony base model is more expensive than the canikons but its not by much is it?
(all in pounds)
A200 = 350
400D = 300 (XTi)
D40 = 300
K200D= 460
E-420= 330
SD14 = 450

For those prices, you really should be recomending the Olympus as well.

But every cool dude knows Olympus sux.

and for the extra 50gbp you get something that slaughters a D40. With D80s being around 600 you are getting a considerably better price/performance.

Well, not really. The only actual flaw to the system is the small viewfinders, which only really matter if you prefer manual focus, which most people don't.

>Just because he'd heard of canon and nikon from walmart doesnt mean he should be informed of all the choices avalible to him.
He wasn't asking for general SLR recommendations. He was asking if he should buy a G9 or a 40D (or possibly D40).

If you're not impressed by the image quality in that 40D shot then nothing will impress you. That's just about as good as you can get with a cropped-sensor DSLR. Also, I'm not sure what grain you're talking about, there is nothing of the sort in that shot.

That sounds a lot like general recomendations from someone not familiar with the SLR world than specific advice on a mount.

I think we all just got troll'ed.

The real question here is why you wouldn't start out with a 400D. Isn't that a better starter SLR?

this picture looks like a pretty bad example of what a 40D can do. i thought maybe they put a cheap piece of glass in front of it, but its the 24-70, so i dunno.

If someone reads
Q: Should I get A or B?
A: B
as "B is the better than any other potential options", then it is not my problem that they lack reading comprehension. If the guy had asked "Should I get the G9 or save up for the Sony Alpha A350?" I would have replied "A350".
