Just to contradict (and provide a different point of speculation) I was issued a five hundred dollar or 90 jail day citation just for being on grounds, I was professionally attired and cooperated with the police. Only after mentioning that this was in fact a school project did they let me know I could have arranged a monitored viewing after contacting local police, and that after appealing in court, they will usually drop the sentence to community service in this case.
I would have to say I believe this is all because I decided to frequent a location most notably visit by homeless people, drunks, and addicts; They have really increased security.
Just note; trespassing is trespassing, it's against the law. (always check for signs and know you are taking a risk)
Oh... another note: You really should go during the day, you would not believe how dark it can get inside these buildings, and nothing looks more incredible that a room illuminated with natural light.
