canon makes some really cheap but nice looking scanners, anyone own one of these that can tell me what the quality is like?

Canoscan 8800f = quite decent for the price, just do everything manual don't trust any of its auto settings. ESPECIALLY COLOR BALANCE.

Kodachrome 64 ASA, scanned at 2400 dpi I think, (4800 = max optical DPI on the scanner) and edited (And resized to half res)

How fast can you scan a tray of slides (around 40)? My dad has like 500 slides and would like to convert them to digital.

I remember my dad putting on slide shows for relatives and it was always fun to see all my cousins (who are all 30 years older than me) as kids. I don't think it is quite the same as watching pictures on a TV.

4 slides 2400 dpi = 5 minutes (No scratch removal or auto settings)
Turn on a few noise reduction type settings and the scratch / dust removal and you are looking at about 10+ minutes for 4 slides.
