Good afternoon, /p/

I'd like to ask you guys, what is your point of view on cropping? Is it cheap, shitty, lame, smart, valid-though-not-recommendable, perfectly fine maybe?

And a question on postprocessing... I feel my pictures are often more desaturated than I'd like them to be, so how do I go about increasing saturation slightly without creating artifacts everywhere? Would Ps CS4 or Lightroom make such adjustments easier (vivid slider etc etc)?

Pic related: Cropped a bit and colors in the picture might be a bit undersaturated for my taste.

0/10, Im asking for opinions, Im not really sure if cropping is perfectly fine, I wish I didnt have to. It's not about gear. Yeah it's a pic of a fucking stray cat that somehow felt really comfortable with me shooting him. If anything you're miles away from understanding the thread. Read it again or leave.

Cropping is valid though not recommendable, imo at least. It's alright to crop images, but I think that everyone, especially those who are just learning artistic photography in any form, should think about the framing of their shot before they take it and crop the fuck out of it in photoshop.
If you have a D3X, however, cropping is completely fine and if anything encouraged, because that is the only use for those 24 bloody megapickles.

I would have left a little bit more of your image on the left, to create more GOLDEN MEAN RULE OF THIRDS shite.
But agreed, I would have lowered luminance and desaturated yellow a little, and maybe pumped up orange and cyan.

I prefer to think of it as dual stage composition.

I personally dont edit my pictures at all..I dont find it kind of cheap..its just my own thing, i dont edit my pictures at all. i just like the get everything out of a photo i guess. but in some cases im sure its fine. i still wont do it though.

Cropping is fine, but try to make it look good in camera first obviously. Heavily cropping a wide image makes it look all weird because of the asymetrical distortion.

Shoot raw or change your picture styles in-camera.

oh /p/ you scamp! i've spent all day on photography websites that are well a little more philosophical than /p/. but man reading threads from housewives and 40 year old faggots with no guts is soul wrenching. /p/ is like a breath of fresh air!

also op you are really dumb. not because you don't know everything but because you don't know where to go to find answers. go buy a book on photography or just lurk on some better websites. don't bring in your retarded still born ideas to FUCKING 4CHAN and then get mad when you aren't coddled!

I've been there already, however. I'm not saying it doesn't work, but relying entirely on a 'rule of thumb' such as that one seems a bit like shooting on Auto, or P, but composition-wise. It's fine, but I don't think people should limit themselves to that.

I crop loads of stuff. Shooting with an APS-C sensor I'm stuck with 2x3 proportion, but I prefer 4x5 or square.
