>The artwork "99 Cent II Diptychon" from 2001 is a two part photograph made by Andreas Gursky probably in 1999, as the work is sometimes called "99 cent.1999".

The work depicts an interior of a supermarket with numerous aisles depicting goods resulting in a colorful work. The work is digitally altered, reducing perspective this way. The photograph is a chromogenic color print or c-print. It is a two part work, also called a diptych. There were 6 sets made and mounted on plexiglass. The photographs have a size of 207 by 337 centimeter.

Thats because /p/ judges everything by technical ability/complexity

The above Diptych was the first of its kind, original, something that hadn't been done before. Hence the popularity etc etc

it was taken in like 2001, maybe if it was taken in the 80's or something then I could understand the hype

Even if the best photographer in the world would haven taken this photograph, I would not like it. It's still shit, doesn't matter who did it.

You're thinking of many different works by Piet Mondrian.

Examples:

Note: I wouldn't take these as representatives of this style of his, these are just the quickest I could get to. Don't know him too well, so I can't say where these stand as exemplars.
