question about lighting from the back Anonymous
what's up /p/, i've been looking at examples on flickr and came upon this image that i liked because of how it's lighted

no idea how it's lighted from the front but i'm assuming that glow behind him and at the edge of his body is from a back light, as in a light that's behind him and pointed directly at him

i don't think the setup would be too complicated for this kind of shot because it's pretty tight and you don't see anything but his upper body

my question is, how do you do this kind of shot with full body? do you hide the light stand behind him the best you can and photoshop it out? maybe try to attach just the light head to a wall only with no stand?

thanks for the help

It'll be difficult for a full body when trying to even out the light. Look at your attached pic. Flash looks like it's behind his neck. Notice the difference in the halo effect on his shoulders to lower down his arms to the top of his head.

eh, looks pretty even to me

how do you think he did the "splash back" to light up his face? some kind of reflector on the ground? doesn't look like direct light

Looks pretty direct to me, look at the shadows on his neck and under his nose. Bare strobe directly above camera I'd say. And one behind him. Simple 2 strobe off-camera lighting setup.

a single source backlight probably wouldn't work too well for a full-body shot. Maybe if you put it really far back and whacked the power up. You could attach it to something behind him with a bogen super clamp, ball bungees, gaffer tape, cheap hardware-store clamps, anything really.

and just shielded off so the background doesn't get any light?

so for something like this shot, i just place the thing behind him and position myself so i don't see it?

gb2/b/ child.

didn't think of the background there. The front light will have a snoot on it so it's only a narrow beam falling on his head, and be high enough that anything else lands behind his body.

that's right. Also www.strobist.com for all your lighting needs, there's thousands of pics like this in their flickr pool.

pretty sure the edges of his face, and his clothing wasn't that dark.
Alot of burning I reckon, and dodging.

The two white lines at the front are definitely drawn in somehow.

Grid for background, and some hard light above camera.

also, judging the edge of his head -- there was a hair backlight. and there might be no background light -- this gradient can be done in post-processing. He could be just shot over plain grey background.

The most aggravating thing about this picture is the MASSIVE annoying shadow beneath his nostrils.

THE OP PHOTOGRAPHER IS CLEARLY USING AT LEAST TWO FLASHES YOU FUCKING STUPID SHITFUCK

You'd need two lights one from above and one under him with medium sized snoots. try it!

and please try to avoid that terrible bar under his nose.
