Depth of Field.

Bokeh is the quality of the blur, and highly subjective- but I think many would agree that really ugly bokeh is the kind where identifiable circles of confusion are hexagonal (their shape is dependent on the shape of the aperture, and not much else.)

Aka here is an example of Bad Bokeh (though whats strange is only the lights show up with the Halo's the rest of the scene looks nicely thrown out of focus)

look at the christmas tree lights near the center of the frame, they have little light Halo's, (bad) what you want is a soft point that diffuses lightly over the picture, provides less distraction etc. Even good lenses can have bad bokeh, its kind of a finicky thing. (and IMO not that important, but some people cream themselves over it)
