could someone explain why telephoto give you a smaller DOF? im using a camcorder(with manual controls) and it doesnt appear to be aperture alone, because playing with that doesnt seem to make any difference. but when i zoom, i get a very shallow depth of field. why is that?

it's because the DoF depends on how close you are from the subject, and a telephoto lens puts you "closer" to the subject...

i can go from 1.6 to closed... does it need to be lower?

anyway, i wont be needing to put a shallow DoF on anything far away, so this is fine.
