Strobist is for faggots.

And if you call yourself a "strobist" you're a fucking faggot as well.

I modeled my starting lighting kit from their suggestion for budget gear, but havent gotten to play with my flash too often, I get a bit lazy. Done a bit of work though.

Pic related, I took it, with off-camera flash and other lights.

/p/ can't afford strobist gear.
I have a sunpak 383 super ready to go, but still waiting on a nikon as-15 and a sync cord extention before I can go off camera.

Doesnt this count as strobist gear?

I <3 strobist. it has its places (many of them) and then again some times it doesnt (many of them). When you do need it though, it helps a helluva lot.

point in case: Rolls Royce rocket engine shot with sunpak 383 on full power behind fan blades and nikon SB-25 on 1/2 power pointed towards the top of the inside of the engine case.

gimmicky shit for people who cant take real pictures. I wouldn't be surprised if you all have a sigma 10-20 too.

What? Flash a gimmick?
>> Anonymous
>>169584
Flash, like many affects, is very often used as a gimmick to make a picture more pop-out than it would be otherwise, a "Hey! Look at me!" to dazzle to cover up mediocre form otherwise and empty or poor content.

I don't think that's what the Strobist guy is trying to encourage, though, even if he does sometimes wind up doing it as a byproduct.

Okay, very well explained, and I agree. Tasteful use of flash though, on the other hand... well, I like it. Personally, I have nothing against pskaught's flash technique though.

anyonw who calls themself a strobist, whos real name is not david hobby is a fag.

Anyone who reads strobist lighting 101, 102, and the on asignment stuff.....takes it all in....applys it in the real world on actual jobs and makes better images because of it is not a fag.

I do that shit on a continual basis. If people are blind to off camera lighting, just shut the hell up and let us make more awesome pictures than you.

I don't either, but two things:

1) A style is not a gimmick. If he did this on just one or two that'd be one thing, but it's just his visual palette, like David Alan Harvey's "Velvia 50 with the shadows turned all oil-black by underexposing" thing.
2) The style he works in is sorta similar to modern advertising, and considering the issues he deals with in his work,

I don't want to be an asshole here, but seeing as how that isn't a particularly good photograph I don't know that it's a particularly good example of why Strobist is rad.

I'm sure that as someone who knows about engines and stuff is concerned that photo is probably awesome, but for a person like me who doesn't know fuck-all about engines this photo is pretty boring and I wish more of it was in focus.

For some reason that went without my finishing it. Continuation:

...it very probably helps his work.

yes because professional shooters who use off camera flash like to be gimmicky.

obvious troll is obvious.

Butthurt fag who doesn't like pskaught is butthurt.

I agree it can be over-used, and seeing people fuck it up really badly is endessly frustrating, but when done well it's a very interesting, very modern style of editorial photography.

And I mean really, no matter how much you hate shots where the lighting is the focal point rather than the subject, that shit still looks better than 95% of the pictures posted on /p/.

No, actually, I really like pskaught's work. He knows what he's doing, technically and artistically.

I'm talking about people who think making gaudy, baroque shit is making photographs worthy of people's attention just because it can grab it for five seconds.

ITT people fail to realize lighting is everything, and bitch about not being able to afford flash's
