Actually, it's a quick trick in LR that would take a bit longer to do in Photoshop; it's basically a slider that controls the local sharpness by a certain contrast difference. It's like local-adaptive sharpening with a Unsharp Mask, but well controlled. The best way to describe is it is that it gives photos more "pop."
But yeah; a highly annoying thing is that it will complain if, for whatever reason, it can't find the file because you swapped out the drive that had it or whatever. So if you aren't handling upwards of 100 photos per shoot or if you already have them organized, then going with it wouldn't make sense.
Oh, another note; you still have to calibrate the ACR to your camera if you want, as there are no built-in or generic profiles for any specific model, just an interpolative method (same as ACR uses). If you want to calibrate it, you have to either get the calibration slide and do it yourself, or just use C1 Pro as it already has the calibration curves for just about all cameras in it. Not entirely necessary, but some people swear by color calibration for getting good images
