oh, also i want the 10.1 d40, not the 6.1, is there a major difference between the two?

As did I. Probably because I barely graduated though...

OP, did your parents get you a car when/'cause you turned 16?

Same here, damn perfectionist parents.

OP:

Forgot the useless HDTV. Television these days is shit, and if there turns out to be something you really want to watch, one of your friends will have a perfectly fine television. Go hang out with him and socialize during the commercials. Chances are it'll be time better spent.

As for movies, you've a computer. Doesn't it have a DVD drive? And if it doesn't- a DVD drive is cheaper than an HDTV.

Scratch the HDTV and use the money there to get a better camera.

>>62561
I agree, I was gonna post this earlier but just didn't.

TV nowadays is shit and the only reason you'd want an HDTV is for your ps3 (I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on if that's not worth it).

...the fuck? A D40 is a great camera. Unless you're a pro, there's not a lot you can't do with a D40 that you can with an expensive ass camera (aside from the MP).

And uh, an HDTV is quite useful and doesn't cost an arm and a leg unless you go for some crazy top of the line one. Game much?

I'm pretty happy with my d40

>...the fuck? A D40 is a great camera

For the price and the range it's in (entry level) it is, other than the lossy RAW compression.

Say the HDTV costs $700. That seems to be the typical bottom end price from a quick websearch. That would give him enough for a K10D or a D80 plus one or maybe two lenses, or enough for the D40x plus two or three, or enough for the D40 plus three or four. And while the camera isn't that important, the lenses are of absolute importance.

>Unless you're a pro, there's not a lot you can't do with a D40 that you can with an expensive ass camera
False. First of all, if one prefers auto-focus (I don't, but most people do) the D40 is crippled in that regard. Second,

>And uh, an HDTV is quite useful

No, it's not. It's a television, a device for delivering advertising and mediocre to piss-poor content to make it palatable to your living room.

It doesn't take high definition to play a videogame. A used CRT television off E-Bay or CraigsList will do the OP just fine.

are you the same douche bag that goes on and on about Lossy Compression Raw?

Stop trolling already. Unless of course you can actually point out relevant examples of when it would become an issue.

congratulations, son, you're not a fucking retard. have some material goods. oh, by the way, we'll also throw in a college education, but it won't really be necessary if you just want to keep eating from our hands for the rest of your life.

>> LOLOL HURRICANES
>>62671

i will. ok, on that note, is there a camera much like the d40x that has some auto focus powerz?
>> Anonymous
>>62688
Any other camera except D40.

Even more ironic is that D40X will not meter on some older Nikon lenses, but a Canon or an Olympus with an adapter ring will.
>> elf_man !fBgo7jDjms
Okay, let's make this clear. The d40 autofocuses, but only with af-s lenses. Has to have the motor in the lens, cause the body doesn't have it. Look up af-s lenses, and decide if you can live with the limitations.
As far as metering goes, basically anything before d and g type lenses probably won't meter. This is much, much less limiting than the autofocus limitations, unless you already have older nikon lenses. Again, look around at the lenses that are available and decide what you're going to want, can afford, and can live with.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>62697
Also, I have to assume that Nikon's gonna be transitioning everything to motor-in-lens eventually. Might take 'em a few years, though...
>> N.C.F.
Bingo.
>> LOLOL HURRICANES
ok, so the d40 doesnt auto focus, someone please suggest a camera that does. in the same price range as originally noted?
anyone?
>> N.C.F.
The D40 DOES Auto-Focus!!!

Just only with AF-I and AF-S lenses. Nikon is going to slowly move all its lenses to having the motor inside the actual lens, rather than camera.

The reason for this is to reduce size of the body, and price of the kits. It gets more people buying camera's, and from that the slightly more expensive lenses.

Eventually I'd expect to see the whole industry do this, slowly.
>> Anonymous
read the replies or fail, OP. D40 has autofocus, but only with the lenses with the "AF-S" suffix. And since most (all) of the lenses Nikon is developing for their digital cameras are AF-S, you're safe. The only lenses you're ever going to need are the 18-55 that comes with the camera and maybe the 55-200 VR.

And manual focus works just fine for everything except for sports photography anyway. Just go buy the damn camera. As fast as digital cameras go obsolete these days, you might as well buy the cheapest SLR you can get.
>> Anonymous
>>62738
Yes... veeery slowly. Canon introduced lenses with the autofocus motor inside the lens body in 1987, and Nikon is finally following suit!
>> Anonymous
Ask any long time Canon user what happened in 1987.

Change does happen, and many will not like it. The target user of the D40/D40X is new to SLRs, so most of the targeted users will not have older Nikon lenses. For these users, the consumer grade AF-S lenses will be sufficient. Some will get a D40/D40X with the intention of stepping up to another body at a later time.

There are a number of lenses (Nikon and Sigma) which will autofocus with a D40/D40X:

ok, another question, approximately how long do the batteries last on the d40?
>> Anonymous
1000 shots or so. more than you could use in a single day.
>> LOLOL HURRICANES
ok, well the real question is, would i last 6 days? or would i need 2 batteries?
>> LOLOL HURRICANES
would it* last 6 days.
>> Anonymous
How the fuck are we supposed to know if it would last 6 days? How many pictures a day are you shooting? Are we fucking mind readers? Use common sense and some basic arithmetic and stop asking dumb ass questions.
>> ^^
>>62535

dude, congratulations :P

in the other hand, you can always search for a cool point&shoot (there are some really good ones) like the SONY DSC-F828 (i have one of those) and it works like a charm, it have the lens attached, but it works great, really.

Google it, around there are all the specifications, so you can choose the better cam for you =)

i dont nkow how long the fucking battery lasts ass wipe. i was just wondering. go ram your dog in the ass some more.
>> elf_man !fBgo7jDjms
It's better to think of battery life in terms of shots, not time. If you don't use it much, it holds a charge for a long time, or you could, potentially, kill it in a day, although that'd be hard to do.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>62898
>i dont nkow how long the fucking battery lasts ass wipe
So are you not reading your own thread?

The batteries last for about 1000 shots. When you're not actually taking pictures, since the camera doesn't need to constantly drive the LCD and CCD to show you a live preview, it barely uses any battery power at all. When I'm doing a serious photoshoot, I can burn through a battery in a day. When I'm just taking the occasional picture here or there, I can go for weeks on a charge. We don't know your shooting style, so we have no idea how long the battery will last you.

It's always good to have a second battery just in case.

There is not, in fact, much difference between 6 and 10 megapixels.

Better to get the D40 and spend the difference on glass.
