By upping the exposure. These are underexposed, hence the noise.

Use a lower ISO.

>Nonprofessional classmate.
I think you meant to say "Nonprofessional photographer." It's solely the responsibility of the photographer to 1) make the model feel comfortable and 2) get the model to appear the way they want them to.

"Look sexy!" isn't usually on the list of things to make a girl feel more comfortable and relaxed. Bad going.

Then what do I say to make a non-professional model relax and stop giving me the deer-in-headlights look?

Haha, I would love to hear 4chan's recommendations for making a girl feel comfortable.

I like the first and second shots the best.
She's really cute, but she has kind of a fat head so you probably don't want to shoot her looking straight into the camera. Also her glasses look bizarre from the direct front.

This is fucking retarded.
Even with the non-pro models I work with there are HUGE differences in their comfortability and their ability to understand what I want them to do and to be creative on their own with their posing.

You make it sound like the model has no responsibilities and is just a lump for the photographer to control. Have you ever tried working with amateur models before? Because it sure as hell sounds like you haven't.

Some of your insight would be appreciated. What do you say to the models to relax and look sexier?

Bleah.
I'm really not the right person to ask this since I absolutely loathe model photography and find the whole thing incredibly awkward.

The #1 most important thing to do is take a fucking shit ton of pictures. Take as many pictures as you think you need to get some good shots, and then take twice as many as that because I guarantee that you're going to end up with tons of half-closed eyes, goofy angles, or crappy shadows.

I guess I tend to get better results when I keep the model as engaged as possible (talking to them a lot) and try to explain as much as possible what I'm trying to capture so that they can get better idea of what I need from them.

In the end, though, a lot of it comes down to natural aptitude or not. Some of the models I work with are naturally pretty people, but they just freeze up in front of the camera and don't understand how to put their good angles forward. Some of the people I shoot are just kids from behind the counter at the coffee shop down the street and they end up being significantly better at modeling than the more experienced models.

BUT JUST FOR THE RECORD THIS IS ALL COMMERCIAL STUFF NOTHING ARTSY SORRY I CAN'T POST SHOTS HERE ETC.

OP here. Thanks for the info. Can you tell me how you got into your photography career? Do you shoot just portraits? Are you self-employed, and if so, how do you advertise?

I'm finishing an AA degree in photography. I really want to work with an advertising agency shooting architecture and sexy models.

I'm a graphic/product/apparel designer who's also responsible for doing web photography of the products/apparel that my company manufactures, so I kind of fell into the photography part of my job.

80% of the photography I do is product stills, and the other 20% is apparel shots using models.

Absolutely no idea how to get into the industry since I just sort of dumb-lucked into it.

Other than a few items we've had at Urban Outfitters we aren't a really well-known brand, which is why I'm the one doing the photography instead of just hiring it out to someone who knows what they're doing. :P

That's nice lighting on the model. Softbox or umbrella? Is she a professional?
>> Pentard !pjwjmEQ1RM
>>202367

Girl is just someone who was working at the coffee shop down the street. These were from the first day she'd ever done modeling, and as you can see she's pretty good at it. Good facial expressions, good posing, very natural.

Lighting is with soft boxes on two Calumet 750 flashes, and then plenty of PP to try to fix my fuckups.

I'm stuck using the setup we had when I got here, which is totally insufficient for what we're doing. I'm working with 2 flash heads right now and one of them has to be dedicated to blasting out the background, which means that I don't have a fill light and I almost invariably end up with dark, ugly shadows that I have to do in and dodge.

Not having the right equipment and not being able to do anything about it really grinds my gears.
