We had a Sony camera rep in our shop the other day, and I spent about 2 hours talking to him about their SLRs.

I spent at least half of that time trying to explain why the button placement is terrible and lack of top LCD is a horrible omission. He wasn't having it, sadly.

It lets you use a bounce card or a reflector in both orientations, which is awesome. If only other manufacturers made their flashes like this.

both those things are subjective. I've never used a top LCD screen as long as the information is displayed on the far more logically placed rear LCD. Take your camera away from your face: you're looking at the back of it.
The way KM/Sony have their controls it works beautifully.

Tip: Try taking your camera away from your head altogether, to make some more interesting shots then you do. There's other positions to hold a camera then eye level. And for anything besides eye-level, a top-down LCD screen is a necessity. Enjoy your snapshots.

You move your head/camera to where ever the fuck it needs to be. if you're shooting from the hip with a slr your doin' it rong.

If you have your SLR out and a a opportunity comes up, from the hip, and checking the setting in top down screen.... it looks like your checking settings (wich ofc makes them look up at you, that makes the shot even better)

DO NOT SHOOT WITH A VIEWFINDER.

Top LCD screens are useful for people who walk around with the camera and only lift the camera to their eye when they take a picture. Not essential, but useful.

BUT DO LIFT THE CAMERA TO YOUR EYE. YOU ARE NOT COOL, UNCONVENTIONAL, CANDID, OR EXPERIMENTAL WHEN YOU DO NOT EVEN CREATE THE PICTURE BEYOND SETTING THE EXPOSURE AND FOCUS.

No? It means I'm being creative. Same for photographing from the ground, etcetera. Once again, enjoy your snapshots.

Fine, photograph from weird angles. But why give up on composing when you're doing that? Look through the viewfinder, no matter what angle you're shooting from. If you don't want to get insane glutes from squatting down all the time, get a camera with a waist-level finder of some sort. Plenty of cameras out there with swivel screens if you want to shoot digital.

So Garry Winogrand never made any pictures?

A good photographer knows it's FoV, and can create a composition inside his head. A viewfinder is nice, but it's really not necessary. Personally, I know the FoVs of the lenses I use, and I know exactly what I photograph, where the frame ends.

Seriously, /p/ has been fail lately. At least before summer, it was tolerable.

As fast as he shot, he insisted on always looking through a viewfinder.

Yes, of course anyone who's shot at one focal length for a while will be able to roughly visualize their composition in advance. Fine-tuning it with a viewfinder is still needed.

I rechecked, and you're right. I stand corrected.

couldn't you just, you know, kneel down or whatever and put your face at whatever angle you wanted?

the top LCD just seems like a tacked on expense.. i dont doubt that it's nice to have, but it's by no means an essential.

I can't lay face flat on the ground. Or, I can't kneel down, because then I would miss the decisive moment happening in front of me.. Of course it's not essential in general, otherwise everyone would agree with me..

Stop shooting manual then?

Or just learn to expose without needing to constantly look at the dials, are you only able to look at the camera once before taking a photo?

Top LCDs are useless with lcd backs, stop pretending that you're "using" it in some special way.

Also, sony > canikon, dont see anything new from those guys. No new sensors, new image stab ideas just the same tired old cameras they've been making (badly) for the past 30 years. Without Sony, nikon wouldnt even be _in_ the digital market.

Never good advice.

>Top LCDs are useless with lcd backs, stop pretending that you're "using" it in some special way.

Not if you want to be able to just look down. They're significantly less useful, but they're not useless.

>Also, sony > canikon, dont see anything new from those guys. No new sensors, new image stab ideas just the same tired old cameras they've been making (badly) for the past 30 years. Without Sony, nikon wouldnt even be _in_ the digital market.

0/10. There were digital Nikons in the *nineties* with Kodak sensors.

>Top LCDs are useless with lcd backs, stop pretending that you're "using" it in some special way.
Top LCDs are way more useful than lcd screens. You can see instantly most, if not all your cameras settings in easy location. It also consumes much less battery life.

Also back in the slr days all the settings were easily changed with only pressing button and then turning command dial. Now if you want to change something you need to go through menu hell to even find smallest settings. Compared to old slrs thats pain in the ass.

Actually I see no real reason for the LCD back. Learn to meter and expose correctly without instantly looking the shitty small image in the back LCD.

Here, ill fix it for you

i wouldnt recomend using manual when you're shooting in a rapidly changing enviroment even with dual controls.

I dont shoot street photography (i shoot urban, but the people are not my subject), but i never find myself not able to use the information provided by my back screen (which is lolhuge and well set out) or the info in the viewfinder.

Also gj spotting the obvious trolling <3

Also back to the flash, replacement for hammerheads?

This is actually where auto stuff trips up. Shooting in a thick crowd? Well, your meter is going to want radically different exposures if there's an opening in front of you with the setting sun shining into it than if there's a person close in front of you wearing a black shirt. One second after that chap moves, there's the sun again.

>I dont shoot street photography (i shoot urban, but the people are not my subject), but i never find myself not able to use the information provided by my back screen (which is lolhuge and well set out) or the info in the viewfinder.

This, and your general shooting style (which is not right or wrong, just different) is why you don't get it.

Except when I'm shooting something continuous, like a performance up on a stage or a construction worker hammering (nails with a Nikon, amirite?) I keep my camera down from my eye, looking over the whole seen and waiting for "the decisive moment," as it's called. Then I raise it up. If you shot like this, or shot random, unpredictable subjects that last a moment (as opposed to buildings, which are static, and sports, which are continuous) and then are gone, you would understand the value of top LCDs.

They're not essential- the camera I use 95% of the time doesn't have one- and if I were a camera designer I would only put one in if it didn't compromise something else, say, size. But they are nice and useful if one does shoot like that.

Priority modes ktnxbai.

>>214693
if you're after that perfect exposure, you can use bracketing and a high fps to get it (protip: thats what its there for)

yes i agree i shoot differently, but i still cant see how a smaller lcd screen is going to be more useful than a larger screen with bigger numbers (which all cameras should be able to do) just displaying the vital info.

Ive shot a bit with rebels, and i didnt find any need to look at the top display. Most of the time im shooting at a fixed aperture and the only thing i look at is the meter in the viewfinder to see what it thinks.
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
Actually, I want a REAL P mode. Programmed. God I want this in a camera...

My preferred Program settings for general usage:

Aperture = 1 stop down from wide open, shifting as wide open aperture changes if on a variable aperture lens.

Shutter speed = variable, but never lower than 1/focal length X crop factor

ISO = minimum that allows the shutter speed to remain within its programming
>> Anonymous
>>214765

l2math, faggot.

that gives you (crop factor/focal length)

i know what you were getting at.. but still.
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>214771
There was an implied bracket, or alternatively, the slash continued. Eg:

1
--------------------------
focal length X crop factor
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>214775
To be more exact, if I had used * for multiplication I would have been wrong as * and / go together for multiply and divide. Using X for multiplication means that the / was not indicative of a divisor and instead meant "over".
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>214776
>>214775
Implied is not good enough for maths, stop back tracking and just say yes, that would have been the proper way to express my intent.
>> Anonymous
>>214782
Yes, implied isn't good enough for maths, but I don't think Einta was trying to write an actual equation. I think he was referencing the concept "1/focal length" as a guideline, as opposed to the actual equation, and "X Crop Factor" was just meant to say "adjusted for my digital camera. If it was an equation, he wouldn't use "X" (more commonly a variable) to write *. He was using pseudo-mathspeak to talk about things that weren't directly strict math, for instance the use of the "=" symbol to designate what he's talking about.

If he was doing it with math, that equation alone would not suffice anyway. It'd have be something taking into account the aperture, the lowest ISO possible (also have to be figured), and the ((1/focal length)*Crop Factor) equation, and the EV according to the meter. I'm in a hurry right now so I won't figure out exactly what it would be.
>> Anonymous
>>214771
It's fucking ridiculously hypocritical to nitpick someone's math while typing so poorly yourself.
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
In any case, am I the only person who would want that out of a camera? Programmable, intelligent auto modes. Hopefully able to be set up differently for various lenses with multiple configs available.

I'd switch to Nikon if their affordable full-frame camera had that. (Hey, ... Tuesday announcement perhaps? Eh, won't get my hopes up on the cheap FF, let alone this.)
