Hey /p/, which digital cameras have the best dynamic range? Has any company done what I have pictured on the left or similar yet?

It's supposed to be a sensor similar to the Bayer filter design. Each pixel is actually a 4x4 grid. The 2x2 grid at the center of each set is taken from the usual Bayer sensor design but the cells around it are similar but operate at different sensitivities of up to 2 EV apart. Like the brighter parts are more sensitive to light and the darker parts are less sensitive. The image processor then turns the data from the sensor to a 32bit RAW. It's like instant bracketing without multiple exposures.

In-camera raw developing can then make instant HDR images based on settings which could sell well to the flickr and devart crowd and the 32 bit RAW can make post processing easier for landscape photographers or people who work with harsh lighting.

What? No camera can support 32-bit RAW. The current market benchmark is 14-bit, which gives about a half a stop difference over 12-bit.

You are right, but the problem is converting the 32bit raw to 8 bit correctly. There is currently no effective, automated way to do it.

i think the problem would be that there would be a lot of interpolation of pixels, youd get pretty small pictures but huge filesizes, which in turn gives you really long write times. this combination of negatives is bad for pretty much any type of photography imaginable. then as mentioned theres also the problem of converting the large bit count to something lower.

To answer OPs questions: The best dynamic range can be found in CMOS imagers with logarithmic response, picture related. They are used in industrial applications, i.e. to monitor automatic welding. They come close to the response of the human eye but suffer from artifacts that of yet have prohibited their use in the mainstraem market.
AFAIK no company has used a color pattern such as yours. There is a patent that uses an uncovered pixel instead of the second green one of the bayer pattern to increase sensitivity by adding the monochrome information. Fucks with color accuracy though.
The Fuji S5 Pro uses two differently sized pixels under the same color filter to achieve the increased dynamic range. This allows two different EVs without losing to much spatial color information.
Your idea has some merrits to its own: it is easy to implement, since no redesign of the underlying sensor is neccesarry. It doesn't even need much development for the color masks, simply making the individual filters more or less thick should suffice. Needs some smart interpolation trickery though to make the image look nice at edges and high spatial frequencies. I'd say patent worthy, to bad you just published.

That's interesting, because I can still capture a significantly higher dynamic range shot with negative film than with my DSLR. Five stops is about the limit of USABLE data on a DSLR. Assuming you expose for highlights, you end up with about four-five stops of clean image, then another two to three-four stops of noisy and useless shadows. So on paper it may look like you're getting eight stops of dynamic range, you're really only getting four. With negative film, particularly black and white negative film, you get seven to twelve useful stops of image.
