OP is doing something EXTREMELY wrong if that's how much noise he gets at 800. My bet is that it was extremely underexposed and he used some exposure compensation slider or some other bullshit to lighten it up.
Included is a full size picture taken by a D40 at 1600. Yeah, I know, there's different noise exposure with different lighting, but jesus christ; his 800 looks fucking horrible when in reality, the D40's ISO performance is right on cue with most other DLSRs.
