Altough the lines are straight (or are supposed to be), zoom can't fix lack of foot zoom.

The photo looks funny because I was too close.

it's just that there wasn't room to walk further away :S

A tilt and shift lens lets you do a lot more in those situations than otherwise possible.

Canon sells them very cheaply (comparatively).

You must drive a very cheap car or have super contacts in the auto industry to get such good discounts. It's true they aren't pocket change, but for what you get and comparing it to the rest of the line-up, it is a good price.

They are cheaper than most their high-end lenses and they sell far fewer. They probably make a loss off of them. All the t&s are priced around the same too, despite differences between them, which hints they are only including them to round off the line-up. Normally all the lenses are individually priced.

No, see, I was saying that the T/S lenses are really expensive. They're only cheap if you compare them to, say, an automobile, which is way more expensive than a T/S lens.

(At least mine is. Kinda wish I'd gone for something cheaper)

Also, I doubt the T/S lenses are sold at a loss. I'm not an optical engineer, so I might be talking completely out of my ass here, but the only obvious technical hurdle I can see to making a T/S lens is that it has to project a larger image circle. And I'm not even sure of that. Canon's T/S lenses don't even have autofocus motors.

The T&S aren't that expensive in Europe. Other L lenses are more expensive here. Perhaps the T&S are disproportionally more expensive in your region? I suppose it's possible for the prices to fluctuate.

A quick look through the price list I have shows Canon currently sell about 16 or so lenses in Europe that are all more expensive than the T&S. They are specialist tools and have smaller production runs than most, that tends to push the prices up. The old supply and demand, blah blah.

You can by the Canon TS-E 24mm 3.5L for under a thousand. That's not too bad for a very specialist L quality lens. I wouldn't buy it on a whim though, I'd have to know for sure I'd be using it enough to justify the cost.
