Fail. Only zooms that are really useful are tele zooms.

"Standard zooms (35-70mm, 28-105mm, 35-135mm, etc.):

Used for taking pictures in bright light — mainly snapshots, scenics, cars, travel pictures, semi-naked women, underexposed pictures, and pictures blasted by uncontrolled on-camera flash. Evidently very useful for clichés. Sometimes used to remove interchangeability feature from interchangeable-lens cameras."- Mike Johnston, "Uses and Applications of 35mm Lenses."

Below something like a 55-200 or 70-200 or whatever, zooms don't really add anything, at the cost of more weight, less optical quality, and less speed. You can always move your fat ass to frame when your subject is within range of a normal or wide. This isn't the case at long tele focal lengths.

So all the wedding photographers and PJ using standard zooms for their job are just insane?
>> Anonymous
>>196893
Not at all, but for pretentious purposes, primes are way better.
>> Sicko !L3HRY/miC.
>>196849

Burn.
>> Anonymous
>>196889

There are no wide primes for crop cameras. Well there ARE some, Sigma 20mm 1.8 comes to mind but that's $400 and you're fixed at 20mm.

This goes down to 17mm and brings you all the way up to 70mm for short tele.

It's an attractive package.

It's not going to change your mind if you're set on primes but it's what most people will use.

better pic

let's hope this forces nikon/canon to offer more constant aperture zooms
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
I would love one of these for canon, the 17-85 is pretty shitty.
>> Anonymous
>>196918

next version will be

EF-S 16-105 f/4 IS for $800

i called it here first
>> Blackadder !!Ch3ATVhRXik
>>196918

The 17-85 is kind of "meh" for many. Shame really. It isn't awful, but people don't seem to be satisfied with it and the next step up in the range for those users is expensive.

It's great that Pentax and others are working hard to compete and show up the rest. It can only make everyone else work harder to win customers and so we all get more stuff for better prices.

16-160 f/4 IS for $1,000

taking bets now
>> Anonymous
>>196935
Do you realize how damned bulky that thing would be?
>> Anonymous
>>196944

something between a 24-105 f/4 IS and a 24-70 f/2.8?

big but not impossible
>> Anonymous
>>196944

It wouldn't be too bad. There's already 18-200 lenses. Make it an L lens to allow for expected bulk and it'd be sweet.
>> Anonymous
nikon and sigma make a 18-200 with VR/OS and it's not huge at all

they sure as hell can make a 16-160 f4 is
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
>>196925
if there is, i'd stay crop body for awhile longer.
>> Anonymous
Nikon just released the 16-85 VR

Canon will probably update the 17-85 IS because it's due for an update

just have to see how long because they just dropped like.. fucking 5 new lenses and a new camera
>> Anonymous
>>196955

Photokina, maybe. Bring out some new lenses along with the début of the fabled Canon 5D MK II?
>> Anonymous
launching an EF-S lens with a full frame body is kind of fail though
>> Anonymous
>>196950
>>196949
Those aren't constant aperture.
>> Anonymous
>>196963
Oh, and they're also huge, anyway.
>> Anonymous
>>196963

they're not, but they're also not as big as a 24-70 2.8

so something in between
>> Anonymous
>>196962

Not really. It means the FF users get something they want and the EF-S users get something too. Everyone is happy.

Only the DA* line is weather/dust sealed.

>consumer standard zoom with constant f/4, SDM motor
I don't care until I see the price. There's a fat chance that this "consumer" zoom will be more expensive than, say, Olympus 14-54 (which is "pro" and actually has weather sealing)
