Compression and quality loss question Anonymous
I asked on /g/ but they were assholes..

So JPG is a lossy format, that's okay I don't intend to resave the photos.

But will there be quality loss from compressing a whole bunch of JPGs in a ZIP or RAR file? Or does it pretty much work like magic and it's perfect?

Yeah, yeah, maybe it's just some pixels lost here and there but I'm anal and I want to backup my photos to DVD and stuff.

Yes. When extracted files will be exactly the same.

From what I can tell, zipping a set of JPG files will do hardly more than make it more manageable. No image data will be lost, but compression is next to null. I'd just save photos directly, while compressing videos to a lighter format through the use of a light editor such as Virtual Dub.

Cool.

It does compress it by a bit. But like you said, it's for easier management. I am uploading the photos on FTP too and I don't want to have like 10 million files.

Zipping, rarring, etc. is just a lossless compression/containing action.

Compression doesn't mean loss.

If the goal is just to save space, I recommend 7zip archives for any additional compression.

Lossless compression doesn't mean loss but compression often does - i.e. MP3, JPEG, AVI. zip/rar is lossless though.

pros and cons of 7zip i've seen in the past is that, yes, they are fantastic and do crunch down more than rar's and zip's etc. But i've actually lost a few things because they do seem to corrupt more frequently than other formats, especially rar's that you can SFX and test.

get irfanview32, resize/crop it to something square and respectably low res, then save as .ico
