LAST TRY.
Just wondering if anyone thinks that this image actually worked... I know It gets way overplayed on places like myspace and such, so I wanted to see if I could actually pull it off without falling to the normal cliche'd style.

Overexposed.

Thanks for that incredibly insightful response, in one word you answered a question that was never asked, didn't answer the one that was, and even managed to note the intention of the picture! An overexposed subject fading into pitch black within a very short distance. Thank you, guru of the exposure world.

high key portraiture~
I'm not sure it "works" with digital cameras

It looks different from the typical myspace pic in that it gets the overexposed look without losing too much important detail, esp. around the eye.

The desk lamp seems to be in the frame more out of need than aesthetic intent. Perhaps you could have done more with it.

Of course, the best thing you could have done to set yourself apart from myspace would be to not pose your subject with a look that's so suburban-sorrow. I look at his face and all I can think is "If mom doesn't come back with the Jetta soon, I'm gonna have to go buy my uppers in the Caravan."

Again, a decent balance of dynamic range, in terms of what's blacked-out and washed-out. But get your light out of the shot. It's like seeing the boom mic come into the frame in a cheap porno.

Also, get an uglier model. And kick him in the nuts just before you snap the shutter. Or punch him in the face — whatever you do, get a stronger expression out of him.

Agreed.(albeit not so violently)
Get "stronger expressions" on your models.
Side Note: When the light is cropped, thee picture looks like a human-faced vase pouring flesh juice.

Well, I'm not gonna punch myself in the face, or kick myself in the nuts, But I'll see if I can't put a little more emotion into it later tonight when it's dark again.

...I wasn't sure what you meant at first.. but when I saw it I started cracking up..

For now though; Is this any better? Worked some photoshop magic.. Elongated the arm so it could be cropped without the arm suddenly ending at an odd angle, Rotated it about 15 degrees, and cropped out the lamp. Tried to Liquefy it and add some more impact by making my eyes more angular/eyebrows straighter... but any significant change and it looked completely off so i ended up leaving that as it was.

I think the original picture is better. I look at the new picture and just can't help but think, "what's going on here?" With no background, there is nothing to judge by but facial expression and posture but the face looks hopeful, making the arm look out of place
