hey /p/,

i've finally decided to plunge into the realm of photography and get a formal education.

so /p/, which one is best for a beginning to intermediate photography class? i've kind of narrowed it down to this two: nikon fe(2) or canon ae-1 program. suggestions still welcome.

pic related.

Where are you going to get an education? The stoneage?

Nikon. If you jump up to a digital SLR, you can keep your lenses if you get a Nikon manual SLR, but you can't with the Canon.

>>150379
Same argument. Still Nikon.

I personnally have a Nikon FE2 as film camera and a Canon Rebel XT as digital one, and I both love them.

enjoy your not metering.

also i doubt op is going to invest any amount of money in lenses.

They're backwards compatible too, if he doesn't get G-series lenses. So he could get modern lenses that will AF and meter on digital SLRs and use them in manual mode on his old manual camera.

colleges do a photography course for a-levels in UK, and many of my students use a manual camera in their first year. because of the government grant system though, we mainly use nikon.

Anything but the AE-1.
FE/FE2 is my favourite.
There are better bodies FROM PENTAX that are usually cheaper than the k1000 on the used market.

I'm sure that we've already got at least five of these threads.

They're easier to hold that way.

If you want a DSLR shaped like the old ones, there's Panasonic L1 and Olympus E-4xx line, but a lot of people who are used to modern camera shapes are bitching about their ergonomics.

>>150738
I don't have any experience with the l1, but I own an e410, and while the grip is more to my liking than the other dslrs I've tried (mainly entry level cams as well as the 30D), it's still fat and clumsy compared the OM series. Maybe I'm strange, but I prefer the "in your hand"-feel of fitting the camera, rather than some unnatural protrusion of it, in my palm, leaving the actual steadying and aiming to my lens-hand.

OP: I'd say either the FE2 (if you can find one at a reasonable price) or any pentax k-mount. Same argument as>>150384.

If you're curious, the first one to look like that was the Canon T90 (although you can see the beginnings of grips on cameras as far back as the Canon A-1. Possibly farther, but I'm a lazy researcher).

>>150742
Thanks, I didn't know. Reading around, it appears to have been well received. Still, grip aside, am I the only one who finds the spaceship curves of post-T90 cameras infinitely less appealing than the hard, sharp lines of the earlies cameras, such as the AE-1 (let alone the FE-2 and OM series)?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>150745
I dunno. On one hand, I do like the classic look of old-school SLRs.

On the other hand, my Rebel's a lot more comfortable to hold for long periods of time, especially one-handed.

Nikanon has a better ring than Canikon
>> Anonymous
>>150741
I dunno, I have the E-410 and Nikon FG and they feel very similar despite the Nikon being around a centimeter thinner. Even the position of that annoying strap ring is the same.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
ahhh, poor T90. if canon hadn't fucked up and phased out FD a year after your introduction, you would probably be known as the greatest manual focus slr of all time.

and i'm saying this as a nikonfag who holds all old nikons in incredibly high regard.

also, its plastic shell reminds me of this abomination.

aside from the new cameras that are specifically designed as throwback to old school cameras

i think the a700 from sony is pretty pimped out for the old school look

Its a compete rip of the 7D which in turn was a rip of the 7 which was one of the last great Film SLR bodies.

Hmmmmm... no. Nope, the A700 looks basically the same as all other modern SLRs.

Actually, I find the a700 much nicer (designwise) than the d7. I can't quite put my finger on what makes it so, but looking at the a700 I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. When I look at the d7, I just want to smash it.

Enjoy your future a700, Butterfly. ;(

>>150875

the lines are a lot rougher and square than other cameras
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>150863

nah, look it up. basically, the T90 signaled the end and beginning of two eras in camera design and function, and it was built like a motherfucking tank (and also like a cheap piece of shit).

it was the end of slide ruler, mechanically linked design, and the beginning of the computer-aided-manufactured, control-by-wire modern slr. it also had a groundbreaking user interface, the first real deep grip (a standard for all slr's today).. extremely advanced features (multi-spot metering, etc.).

really, just look it up. it was a landmark camera that every canonfag should know about, and very few do, thanks to the EOS mount.
>> Anonymous
>>151010
And all that shit things up except for the grip.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>151011

yes/no. i'm a big fan of mechanical linkage. it's safer, it has tactical feedback, etc. i also think CAM is the reason why dslrs are so chintzy and plastic (along with all consumer goods).

but explain to me how to make a mechanically linked dslr?
>> Anonymous
>>151013
Same way you make a mechanically linked film SLR. Just change a sensor for the film and pressure plate, and an SD card and battery for the film spool and winding mechanism.
