What does /p/ think of these pictures? These were taken two weekends ago at the beach in grand haven, michigan. I spent the day hanging out with friends. Using my fm10 camera, the sun was really bright so most of them didnt turn out.

give me some constructive critism

peggy is hot, buy a DSLR, you like it better, good pics but too whited out to make then good

I like the contrast, reminds me of photos from the 50s - Not much has changed about the beach since then as well. You could work on your composition a little more though, for instance in the first and second one it seems like you tried to center their heads, at the risk of creating lots of negative space. If the clouds were particularly interesting I could understand but it's just ... gray nothing. A simple crop could save those two, easily. The fourth one might have been a bit better if they weren't so close to the edge, and taken at a different angle so they weren't so squished together - would have been impossible though without getting wet, I'm guessing :c

I see what you were going for in the fifth one - unfortunately it came out crooked. Just rotate and crop and it'll be perfect.

I can't exactly tell much about your style from only 5 pictures, but if you really enjoy this then don't give up. :)

I like this best.
They seem to have a really weird smoothing which I don't find appealing at all

could that be from editing them in photoshop?

I really want a DSLR, specifically the nikon d40. I wont have the money for it for a long time. I use a nikon fm10 and my crappy cannon s10 2.1 mp digital. It sucks cause it doesn't even blow up to 4x6 well.

I found these most interesting. The first, with the girls jumping off into the water, is probably the best. The second probably works well because it's presented in a batch of old-timey looking B&W photos. The third is a neat crop/composition idea, though the execution came out imperfect, and the fourth is just kinda cool.

Because the only thing aperture controls is exposure, amirite?

Getting the depth of field you want isn't worth much if you've blown the whole frame out to a blank expanse of whiteness.

...

True, if he realized that me misjudged the exposure and misjudged it consistently across the entire roll. The fact that the pics he posted here aren't blown out, though, suggests that neither of the above are true.
