Hey, /p/, I realized something yesterday. You know that advice we give people sometimes to buy a Powershot A-series and spend the rest of their money on hookers and blow to take pictures of?

We ought to take our own advice. I was thinking today- I've been planning on saving up for an M3, 40/2 Summicron-C, and a viewfinder for it.

With all that money, I could buy a bus ticket to and rent a cheap hotel room in another city.

So that 5D you're thinking about? Fuck it. Take your Digital Rebel and buy skydiving lessons. The wide-angle zoom? Get your kit lens- come on, 18mm is really wide enough- and fill up your car with gas and drive around the countryside, pulling over when you see nice light. Stop that thing down to f/11 and get some nice landscapes. Or, you know, some hookers and some blow. I heard Ansel Adams found all sorts of hookers and blow in the countryside.

Uh putting a Summicron-C on an M3 is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.

care to fill us in on why?

widest framelines the M3 has are 50mm. you don't want to use an external finder I guess.

I'm saving up, and considering a 50mm summarit-m for my M2. Maybe a Summicron, don't know yet.

Yeah, the selling point of the M3 is the greatest finder ever made for shooting 50mm lenses. If you're going to use an external viewfinder, you might as well get an M1 or MD and save some cash (while losing the rangefinder, admittedly). Or there's the Bessa T (no viewfinder, but has a rangefinder) or R3a/m (40mm frames) if you don't insist on a Leica.

I like Leicas too, but if you're already going to use a camera with a limited feature set compared to something modern, shouldn't you stick to its strengths and not purposely gimp it further?

Why a Summarit when a used 'cron is cheaper? Leica's after-sales service is supposedly getting worse and worse, so you're not missing much.

This is the best thread evar.

1. I like a wider normal. I don't like the Voigtlander 40/1.4 too much; foreground rendering is awesome, but I've looked at a lot of sample shots and the bokeh is really hit or miss. I want an M3 for the super-accurate focusing (I don't think the 1x Voigtlanders have as long of a baselength) and the legendary ergonomics.

2. The full viewfinder of the M3 pretty accurately approximates a 40mm frameline, wnich is another reason for an M3, over other Ms: I've got the option when I need it of just focusing and composing with the camera's viewfinder, or if I have time, switching to an external finder for slightly more accurate composition and the whole see-outside-the-brightlines.

But this is all theoretical now.

Thanks.
