In awarding the Nikon D40x the "Best Entry Level Digital SLR", the TIPA editors note:

"..the Nikon D40x is an excellent D-SLR for those entering the world of digital photography, with superb image quality and a very fast shutter response. In a kit package with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens, it comes with many advanced features and offers a shooting rate of up to three frames per second. The D40x is light, compact and boasts a high quality 2.5 inch LCD for camera setup and image review. "

Image quality on the D40x is not appreciably better than the D40. The extra pixels don't gain you much.

Nikon D40's okay. Your lens selection is a bit limited, though. If you like the Nikon system, you might do better to get a used D50 or go up to a D80.

I think you can get the D80 for under 800 crazy-european-monopoly-moneys. It goes for $800US new, and the Euro's worth more than the Dollar right now.

Alternately, I would be remiss as a canonfag if I didn't bring up the Digital Rebel XT or XTi, which have more autofocus-capable lenses than the D40 and a few other advantages for the same price (faster shutter speed, more autofocus points, higher resolution--although, again, 6MP is a perfectly good resolution).

Not really mate, the only thing limited are the classic primes like the 50mm and 85mm. The D40 market most likely would not bother with such

I shoot with the D50 and like the Nikon system.

Maybe its because I am used to Nikon but I used a friends XTI and didn't like the lightweight, the screen, and the menu set up.

anyone agree?

Yeah. If you're a Nikonfag.

Canonfags could say the same about you.

I don't like the XTI simply because it feels like a toy. And it doesn't have a spot meter.

Although, I don't know how the D40 feels.

xti+battery grip = problem solved, then add the canon hand grip for awesomeness.

I got this camera and I like it.

Rumors of the D60 replacing the D40x pretty soon

You can get a D100 used for less than the D40..

>the only thing limited are the classic primes

In other words, the lenses most worth having.

It's probably because you're used to the Nikon system that you didn't like Canon's menu layout. Once you get used to one a different one seems odd and inefficient, but the same thing happens when somebody who uses Canons tries to use a Nikon. You're best off learning both of them; what matters is not the camera, but what's in front of the lens and behind the body.

Canon 400D, superior camera, better flexibility with lenses, its a no brainer. Around 550$ US right now...
