Hey, there's this guy offering to sell a non-AI Nikon 55mm f/1.2 (!!!!!!!!) lens that supposedly mounts on D40 and D40x, but not on his D70 or any other current dSLR from Nikon. Apparently it can cause damage to the other SLRs? I have no idea. Is this for real? The price is almost too good to be true, but I'm ADDICTED to fast lenses, and f/1.2 is about as close as it gets to the hallowed f/1...

Anyone know?

Pic unrelated, but taken with my current fastest lens, a meager f/1.8 :(((

why does wide mean fast? is it because you can get the right exposure using a higher shutter speed?

That's part of it, but not the primary reason. One reason is night/concert photography, or anything where the light is really dim. The other reason is the razor thin depth of field. I just love it. It creates some really amazing artistic renderings, almost painterly.

My dream lens is the Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1.0

Oh yes, it will be mine.

He's either trying to scam you or he's an idiot, probably the former. It'll damage any Nikon DSLR.
Your f1.8 is only about a single stop slower. Don't sweat it, and don't buy that lens.

Drat. :(

It would've been a silly purchase anyways, since I'm getting out of the Nikon system for the moment, trying to move over to Pentax, where a 50 1.2 can be mine for a meager $400. :D

i dont see how it will damage the camera, can you enlighten me please?

ultra fast lenses aren't very sharp anyway, and their boarders are worse than my eyesight without glasses.

i always push my film by 2 stops than needing an ultra fast lens

the D40 and d40x use a pushy minimum aperture switch instead of a slidey tab. As long as you're careful with oddballs (wides and medical lenses, basically) you can mount non-ai lenses on the d40, no problem.

all things being equal, mounting a non-ai lens that has not been converted will damage ANY ai slr. You can get the lens stuck with the indexing tab or just break the indexing tab off.
The things that change that are the bodies with indexing tabs that flip up (ft3, f3, f4, fe, off the top of my head) or ones that don't have indexing tabs AND! don't have a slidey minimum aperture switch (D40, D40x)

an aside, this lens has a reputation for being fairly soft and flarey as hell. If you don't get a chance to try it before-hand, make sure you get it cheaps :3

I think the later runs had better coating but I'm not sure if it makes a huge difference or if I'm even remembering correctly.

Very enlightening, thank you. Wow, I wonder why the D40x isn't more popular, then. It's got good high ISO performance, and can mount more lenses? Shame it doesn't have an AF drive in it, otherwise it'd be a damn good body.

This was the picture I found on flickr taken with the 55mm f/1.2 that made me want to get the lens. But now that I can't mount it, and I'm switching from Nikon anyways... oh well.

it's small and cheap -> not tacticool

If the thing allowed for stop-down metering and/or had a viewfinder no shittier than my d70, I'd pick one up for sure.
D40+pamcaeks = almost pocketable SLR

*has a, that is. I haven't played with one, so no clue.
