Stick with your A520 until you can afford an SLR. Given its small sensor (which means much more depth of field for your aperture), it's probably better for landscape/nature than otherwise better cameras.
The "widescreen" effect that most cameras generate is done by simply cropping out the edges of the shot, which you can do yourself. If you're talking panoramas, I'm pretty sure that the A520 has a special panoramic mode where it helps you line up the pictures from shot to shot to make it easier to stitch (I know my PowerShot A95 does, but I'm too lazy to look up specs on the A520).
I know the draw of getting more gear is a powerful one, but hold off until you can make that gear purchase really mean something and not just get a marginally better P&S.
