Olympus om10 Anonymous
So I got my hands on an olympus om10 today. Should I even waste the time to get a battery and use this thing?

It's an old SLR. Like late 70's to mid 80's...

HELL YES. OM lenses, as a general rule, are razor sharp and dirt cheap on the used market, and the OM10's a tank.

Yes and no. It's like those who think everything Pentax made was gold. It just isn't so.

There are some good guides out there- but basically, you don't really want anything not "MC"(multicoated), if I remember correctly.

As for the body- several of the old OM cameras had meters which ran off of the now-illegal watch cells which haven't been made in at least a decade. That means the cell which DOES fit is too low a voltage, and as a result, the meter is screwed up.

There is a guy in NY (I -think-) who does the proper modifications to use easily available watch-cell batteries. He also replaces the foam adhesive used inside the viewfinder (which breaks down and damages the screen/mirrors.) He also cleans and calibrates the camera.

Turnaround time is measured in weeks, but if you care, he's the guy to go to. Sorry, i wish I had more info for you on where/who he is.

You don't have to send your camera off to New York to have the meter adjusted to work with alkaline batteries. Any marginally competent camera repair shop can do it. Same goes for cleaning/adjusting and replacing foam seals.

Also, those mercury batteries are only illegal in the US. If you really don't want to bother having your meter calibrated, you can order them online.

or you can get weincells which have worked great for my old pentax meter. I think they're zinc, like hearing aid batts
