Ack, camera issues here - I foolishly let a sibling use my D80 (which WAS going to be my main cam for an overseas trip)for just a few snapshots while I was busy doing something. I was with her the entire time, and she didn't really do anything wrong. I think she flipped the AF-M tab on the body to M while she was using the auto focus to take a picture, and the lense freaked. The auto has gone all screwy, and won't focus. It's making that terrible squealing-grinding sound when it adjusts, and can't focus correctly.

I have a warranty on both the lense and the body.

Anyone know where the problem is?

Pic...well, not really related. :|

Woops, forgot to mention that the lense is a Nikkor 18-135.

Did you try taking the lens off the body and re-mounting it? Most likely the focus linkage just got knocked out of position. If that doesn't work, take it by a reputable camera shop and see if it's an easy fix or if it needs to go in for warranty work.

Flipping between AF and M, even while taking a picture, shouldn't cause any problems. I do it all the time and have been using Nikon cameras for years.

I checked and it wasn't the mount. It just focuses not quite enough and then goes out of focus, back in, back out, etc.

I can see from looking into the lense while trying to focus that the sound is coming from the internal lense adjustment.

If the focus ring on the lens was turned when the lens was trying to focus, that might have done some damage...

Don't give it to a "reputable shop", call Nikon, see what they say. They'll either say "push this and then do that", or they'll have you ship it to them.

Otherwise, Nikon will bitch that an unauthorized dealer attempted repair, and mail it right back to you.

This is /p, not "/diy-camera-repair-advice-for-shit-under-waranty", by the way.
