hmmm I've been wondering, is it better to shoot surf at crazy shutter speeds (like 1000-4000) or shoot slower to blur the water?

Enlighten me /p/hagots

The composition is fine, but the files look really, really flat and lifeless. Try processing them a different way.

Did you shoot JPEG or raw? I really hope the latter.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>97541

I was waiting until you had finished posting the batch. Before the comments on the pictures: Any cropping or PP done or is that something you're yet to tackle?
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
Most have massive cropping, only the 1st and 2nd to last are not cropped.

No other work and yes its shot in jpg because I cant afford the space to shoot in raw (ive taken 600 this weekend)
>> Liquefied !!CF1+3tSFCce

Does Sony not make a slower, cheaper 400mm? Like Canon's 400mm f/5.6?
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>97552
No the tele range is still quite limited.

Im going to sleep so dont expect any replies for 8hrs.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>97525

That first one's a good 'un. Probably my favourite out of the lot.

>>97541

Is that...SYLAR!?

I think you've done well. You were pushing what that set up can do to the limit in that situation. Considering the dreary UK weather I think a little (or a lot, whatever you can get away with is all good) PP would bring the best out of these. Stop it looking so cold and dull, even if that was really the case. Might be better to judge them after PP too. Up to you.

Your framing was quite nice in general, though for the first and second to last (your non-cropped) I might nit pick over that aspect. His right hand is missing in the first (I think it'd look better a little zoomed out for that shot while keeping the same focal point and position) and a little too close to the left on the other for my tastes, but at those speeds, shooting situation and reaction times needed for what is happening there is plenty to be happy about with this lot.

I like the leaping shots too. Good timing with those. It's nice to see the action at its peak frozen for the viewer. You kept the shutter speed nice and high, which was a good choice too. Lots of frozen spray in the air to emphasise the movement and action to the viewer and it keeps the subject movement blur to a minimum. The first one came out especially crisp.
>> Anonymous
The first one is the only okay one.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
Were these all hand held? Good job.
First one is great, i feel the crop is a little bit tight and i also agree that the rest of the photos are a little flat, but that's merry ol England for ya.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
Yeah these are all hand held with my cheap sigma 100-300, mostly at 300 too.

The first one was surfing a lot closer to me than everyone else so I wasnt expecting him to be there which is why its not as well framed as the rest. I'll do some PP on them to see if i can make them nicer but they are an accurate representation of what it looked like!

Not too shabby considering how much you seem to hate that lens. It worked it's little glass heart out for you. I quite believe that this was what the day looked like. Not the best time for the most exciting light. I'll wait and see what you can dazzle us with after PP.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>97850
I did some PP on them but nothing spectacular resulted so SAGE TIEM!

Did speak to another photophriend who used to shoot races and advised me i need a 300 or 400, so now i know what to save up for after i get the A700 *SIGH*
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>97859

It's a never ending drain on the wallet once you start down the path, no? In the meantime you'll have to practice your Photoshopping skills to squeeze the most out of what you've got.

I don't know if you've seen it yet, but this report on the A700 seemed quite positive: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/Sony%20-A700.shtml
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>97862
I dont need to read reviews on it its not like I have much choice about what other bodies I use:

7D, 5D, A100, A700.

Im more interested in what the lenses are going to be like.
>> Anonymous
>>97864
Why not stick with the A100 and buy better lenses?

In the meantime, why not pick up some of those old Minolta lenses you're always talking about? I'm sure they made a 400mm long enough ago for you to get cheaply.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>97871
The 200 HS G goes for over 1k each time, I have NEVER seen a 400 for sale.

My A100 is starting to die from shooting in the rain a lot, having the A700 will actually help that, as will the vertical grip and the useful ISO 800 and 1600s (unlike the A100). Plus the benifits of multiple bodys for action shooting are huge.

Bail on Sonylta, dude. They were never a very strong system in the first place, more for enthusiasts. There's never been a better time to go Nikon, especially with their kickass new VR kit lens.
>> Anonymous
>>97876
we'd have no one to pick on if that happened :(
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>97876
No and if i get another system its going to be canon because they have worthwile long lenses.

Besides nikon=sony amrite.
>> Anonymous
>>97886
i dont see whats wrong with nikon's long lenses. and the sensor yes, but past that no.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>97888
The sensor is probably the most important part of the camera.

Besides I know a bunch of nikonfags and they are generally a bunch of idiots, ofc if i did get a nikon I could borrow some 400/2.8s~ but then thats boring.

Also 1D > D3
>> Anonymous
>>97889
its what you do with the sensor. sony might know sensors, but nikon knows cameras! YEAH

>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>97890

The Sony = Nikon sensor argument is flawed and simplistic.

Nikon sensors ARE manufactured by Sony, but are designed by Nikon. This was true for the D2x and D3... actually i haven't read confirmation that the D3 sensor is Sony manufactured.

Canon still does have the upper hand in the sports section. But Nikon is catching up nicely... their telephoto range is pretty damn good compared to Canon.

>>Also 1D > D3

Sony Alphail < Any other DSLR
>> Anonymous
>>97892
its cheaper because it is magnitudes below nikon, obviously.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>97895

and because Nikon has better firmware and sensor processors.

Sony HAS to market their cameras cheaper because they're a new player with no real established customer base.

that is true.

another tasty nugget is that the machinery required to make the machines that make sensors are manufactured by nikon lol

clients include sony (for obvious reasons), nikon (duh) and lol canon.

Yeah, except they actually know what they're talking about.

"Expose your raw files to the left" versus "underexpose your JPEGs and push it with curves." Yeah, real similar.
>> Anonymous

Typo.

Should read: "expose your raw files to the right."

Exposing to the left actually would be rather similar.
