/P/, I still use the 18-55 kit lens I got with my 30D, and I'm looking to replace it with a good quality zoom lens.

My favourite so far is the EF 24-105 (pictured). Opinions, suggestions, advantages and disadvantages please.

Photozone.de has fairly technical and non-biased reviews, the lens in question can be found here:

If you want a good all rounder, go for the Canon 24-70 2.8L. Very sharp, but also expensive.
If you just want to replace the 18-55, go for the Tamron 17-50 2.8. Affordable and also sharp, far less distortion at its widest than the canon kit lens. Hardly any distortion at 24mm.

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 also has VERY close focusing. Not macro, but its an excellent lens

The 24-70 2.8L, Tamron 17-50 2.8, or the 17-55 2.8 Would be good replacements.

I just picked up a used 28-70 f/2.8L for around $600. It's pretty badass and almost cheap compared to a new 24-70.

Let me throw my hat in for the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. It's right up there, quality wise, with their 90mm macro. In other words, a hidden gem from a third party lens manufacturer.

90% of the images I've taken in the past several months have been with the 17-50, and it's just fantastic. Sharp as fuck at f2.8, crystalline by f4, and fugettaboutit at f8. Three different people on my paper own one, including a member of the faculty. He also owns the Nikon 17-55 for the better build quality, but got the Tamron because it produces images just as nice, but he doesn't worry as much when he's taking it into "interesting" situations where it could get damaged or stolen.

the 24-105mm f/4L IS is a REALLY solid lens.

it has really good range, wide angle (even with 1.5x crop), telephone, short minimal-focal distance for decent macro, great glass, solid sturdy feel/weight, good control, etc, etc.

sure, any number of Canon's more specialized lenses can do better this-and-that. but over-all this is one of their best lenses, probably their best, reasonable priced "walk-around" lens.

of all the Canon lenses i have access to at school (17-40mm f/4L, 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, 24-105mm f/4L IS, 70-200mm f/2.8L, 300mm f/2.8 IS, and 105mm macro) it's the one i check out the most.

if i went anywhere and could only take one lens,it'd be the 24-105mm f/4L IS.

I, too, can vouch for the wonderfulness of the 24-105. I don't own it, but I know someone who does, and I've gotten a chance to shoot with it in the past.

But to say that it's got a "wide angle" is a tad off. 24mm at a 1.6x conversion is 38.4 millimeters, just on the border between the wide and normal ranges.

And the guy I know who has it? Has a 5D specifically to use this lens, because 38.4-168 is a much less useful range than 24-105.

I have that lens and it is absolutely fabulous. Worth every penny.

The amount of numbers involved in photography makes my head hurt -_-

Assuming I decided it would either be the 24-70 or the 24-105, which would P recommend?

24-70 is faster, 24-105 has more on the telephoto end. Which is more important to you?

Why bother with the 17-50 or 24-70 2.8 Tamron when you can get the 17-70 2.8 Sigma that's just as sharp for around $400?

how to buy a new zoom lens:

are you 1) making money with your camera on a regular basis/obsessive artist or 2) someone who wants reasonably sharp pictures without going bankrupt?

if you answered 1, go first party lens only. if you answered 2, go third party lens only. i'm going to guess 2, since you're on 4chan asking for lens advice.

The only reason you ever need a thousand dollar canon zoom is if you're making money with your photography. Third party lenses are all about the same quality, which is to say reasonably good without swinging for the bleachers.

First party lenses are always better, anyone who spends their time arguing about third party lenses is a rank amateur.

Unless you are getting sponsored to use them like some of the pros? :D
