Nikon MF on Canon Anonymous
I have a 30D and I just found a 28mm 2.8 Nikon lens from my father.

It doesn't look like this one but the markings say 28mm and 2.8 and it still has that prong thing and aperture ring.

So I would like to use it on my camera. Is that possible? What kind of adapter do I need?

Oops, title should read Nikon MF lens.

A search on eBay and you should be sorted. Make sure to include the search "Worldwide" option if you don't find enough. HK has loads of these things.

Search eBay for "eos nikon adapter"

There are two types. The cheap kind (~$10) just lets you stick the lens on the camera. The expensive kind (~$50) let you stick the lens on the camera *and* give you focus confirmation. It won't autofocus for you, obviously, but the viewfinder's focus point will light up when that point is in focus like when you're manually-focusing a Canon lens.

It's manual focus, so uh, obviously eh.

And since there's no information relayed to the camera, what mode will I be using? Tv? Or do I just use M and set the aperture to the one that's on the lens?

Never underestimate the stupidity of people on the Internet.

Av or M. Tv will probably be basically equivalent to M since the camera can't adjust the aperture to match your chosen shutter speed.

You're going to be using stop-down metering. I believe the aperture's going to read F00 and won't be changeable on the camera side, but I could be wrong (not sure how the chipped adapters work; that's how it works if you just don't have a lens on or don't have it mounted properly).

you can't change ai-s aperture from the camera either way. you have to do it on the lens.

So M or Tv. Dial in shutter speed on camera and set aperture on the lens.

That works.

Near 50mm equivalent, here I come!

My chipped adapter identifies as a 50mm f/2.0 (with 2.0 being the only selectable aperture).

This is free plus the cost of adapter.

And I wouldn't buy the 2.8 version anyway, 1.8 FTW but that would be more money.

It only affects EXIF data. Aperture value is fixed so the camera doesn't try to close the aperture after it meters.

I have one of the first chips for Olympus ever made with the data protocol not fully cracked yet, it shows some random focal length and aperture like 51mm f/3.7, but the focus confirmation still works on all lenses from 28mm to 300mm.
