Hey /p/,

What do you think about getting a 58mm adapter, UV filter, and a Lens hood for my S3 IS? I know it'll at least protect my lens. I'd like to experiment with different filters; although I have no extra cash, i figured it'd be a worthwhile investment to get the above three things. Will this help shots at all?

I'd say getting a polarizing filter would be a better idea than a UV filter.

Also, the lens hood will cut down on lens flare, and who the hell wants that?

Yes, do it.

The polarizer is the most important. You'll also want a Neutral Density filter, a graduated Neutral Density filter, and maybe some effects filters. The UV filter will be useful sometimes, but not that often, unless you're shooting landscapes or something like that.

Polarizer's actually more useful than UV for landscapes, anyways.

Polarizer's more useful for everything, but I can imagine someone who shoots a lot of landscapes under heavy sun wanting a UV filter to get the haze out.

In that case, you'd want a "sharp cut" UV filter, which is basically a UV filter that actually does filter almost all UV. Popular UV filters are basically glass, which inherently doesn't pass most UV anyway. Sharp cut UV filters are coated or treated to actually block Haze-causing UV.

You can sort of see some effects from a regular "protecting glass" UV filter, but sharp cut filters are the way to go if you actually want to cut haze.

use the uv filter as a lens protector, other than that, it's pretty worthless

The three items i listed are sold as a set. what i was really asking is, Is it worth it to buy that set now even though I don't really have enough money for any filters yet. Should've been more clear with my question. Thanks guys

How much is the set?

You'll at least have one filter and a lens hood.

A lens hood is very useful, and filter adapters often improve the handling of P&S cameras.

"No thanks, I had Reese's for Breakfast!" I say, "Candy? For breakfast? Get real!" He says, "Not candy! Reese's Puffs cereal!" So he sliiiiiiides me a bowl. I crunch into it and WHAM! My mouth goes crazy! That smooooooth combo of peanut butter and chocolate-y taste... swarming in milk... attacking my taste buds! Then his dad pops in, "And it's part of this complete breakfast!"

Reese's Peanut Butter Puffs: It's candy... for breakfast!

Yeah, go for it. My only quibble is that 58mm is an annoying filter diameter. If you ever upgrade to a Canon digital SLR, the only lens that that 58mm filter will be useful with is the crappy EF-S kit lens--the vast majority of their cheap lenses use a 52mm filter thread, and the vast majority of their pro lenses use a 72mm thread. I think Nikon is similar (certainly at the high end, but I don't know what their cheap lenses use. The old Nikon next to me has a 52mm diameter lens, though, if that's any indication).

well, the adapter for the s3is only comes in one size, and that's 58mm. IT clicks on to a ring on the front, and allows you to screw 58mm bits into it. so yeah, 58mm sucks, but with the s3is, not much of a choice.

i'm not op, btw, just an s3is owner who has the adapter/lens hood set. I bought a UV filter and a polarizer seperately, but i never ever use the uv filter. (shrug)

also, is it worth mentioning that you can use the lens hood OR a filter, but not both? Or is this common sense and i'm n00bing it up?

There's a 52mm adapter for the S3IS

o rly? 3rd party? the canon catalogue at the store only had the 58.

I've always heard using filter adapters to get to a smaller filter was a recipe for disasterous vignetting.

Or instead, you could sell your s3is and upgrade to an s5is
differences: 8MP, face detection, flash hotshoe, and some other minor things.
