How would one shoot a parade? It happens fast, so is auto okay in that instance? Do you shoot in, say, aperture priority to give some control? Full manual?
And do you use a prime lense? Zoom? Just got a 50mm thinking it might do well in this case...

I may be going to one soon and figure I could take some shots while I'm there.

I would shoot in full manual with a normal and medium telephoto prime. Manual isn't slow at all when you're familiar with your equipment.

You do whatever works best for you. Do you normally shoot manual or aperture priority? Do you normally use primes or zooms? If so, whatever way you normally work will get you the best shots. Unless it's at night, it will be well lit enough that if you want to use a zoom you should be able to, and I can see the attraction of one here.

I don't understand this Aperture priority, since you do have to manually load magazines. But I would say any full auto or Semi Automatic weapon should be fine.

50mm shells might be a bit too much, in fact If you can find any automatic weapon that fires 50mm shells I will be impressed.

Also that looks like quite the high profile parade you would be shooting up, I wouldn't recommend going for something so large profile.

I agree with this man.
If its the first time you shoot a parade, you should start small.
Always have a reliable shootan device though, you never know when it might "jam" on you. I'd recommend a back up "point-and-shoot" that you carry in your pocket or a holster just in case something bad occurs and you have to become an hero.

Something like the 24-70 area zooms seems like it would work well for this. If you feel comfortable using one prime for your shooting style then that's fine too. Maybe more than one if you are happy to bring along extra lenses and quickly swap them at the scene when needed.

It does depend a lot on your own preferences and style.

A 24-70 sounds nice on a crop body, especially a 1.5x crop body. What sensor size are you shooting at?

Don't worry, I'll be safe in the book depository, they'll NEVER find me there.

I use a 1.6x crop sensor - Canon. I think that length would work well for the parade. Normally I prefer it to be more on the wide side for the general purpose len and so with my crop sensor I'd like the 17-55 (27-88 on my crop). For that parade you're probably going to be standing by the sidelines and not getting in really close or able to move around so much (depending on how busy it is) so the shift to the longer end might be more practical and if it's on a film/FF body then it makes even more sense. You'd get a normal to medium tele that way. Saves trying to swap lenses in a crowd if it's busy.

Then again, I wouldn't say that wide and ultra wide wouldn't be useful. All depends on the individual and the circumstances. Some folk like having a wide prime as their walk about lens.

I have a 50mm, a 18-135, (both bought specifically for my D80, which I'll be using), and a 75-240 and a 35-80 (from an old N60 SLR camera).

At first I was planning on just using the 18-135, and just deal with any distortion. But the 50mm just arrived today, which made me debate using it. I guess I'll opt for a zoom because I have more control over what's in-frame.

As for Auto/AP/Manual, I haven't shot much in manual since college (yay photo courses), so I'm a tad rusty. AP mode might be better I guess. Few weeks ago I tried shooting some animal shots in auto, and it came out looking like shit. I guess it didn't choose good settings. Meh.

ok, zoom and AP mode I guess then..

Another option might be trying to get back into practice with manual. It all depends whether you want to focus more on "getting good shots now" or "getting better shots over the long term."

This is how you shoot a parade.
