you can get great quality on film, but every time you take a photo you think about how much it costs.
If you get a ~6 MP DSLR like a Nikon D40 or Pentax K100 or something like that, you can experiment more for a cheaper overall cost. You can also get some secondhand OK film DSLRs for not a lot. I have been using an old film DSLR that is almost completely manual - it does have metering though. The experience has been teaching me av lot about photography, having to adjust everything by hand for every shot.
