D70 or..? Anonymous
Hey /p/.

I'm a total DSLR nub, looking to break into the field, but with not many ideas as to where to go for cameras. It seems that Canon and Nikon dominate the field over the rest, so I've been looking into the D40/D40x, although not too sure about what I've seen from Canon.

Anyway. There's a store just up the road from me where I can get a D70 body for just £275/$550, which I think is pretty sweet. The problem is, I don't know what lens to go for on-top. My budget is about £350, although I could be pushed to go higher.

Or would I be better off buying a D40 with the kit lens for beginner photography?

Cheers.

if your a beginner.. buy a film camera and learn the hard way

I use canon, and I really like using canon, so I'm just going to give you some advice. about canon.

if you're a total dslr beginner, really, go for the gateway dslr.

You'll get better faster with less options and a few more limitations, and you'll be able to make amazing pictures anyways.

Get yourself a rebel xt. Pro's use it as their back up camera, it's good, light, and most importantly, cheap.

Buy yourself the 50 1.8 prime, and maybe... I don't know, the 28-105 (but the older one with the viewfinder window).

you should be able to find the 50 1.8 for under 100 dollars (american) new, and the 28-105 for pretty cheap used.

Both are quite decent stopped down one or two stops from the lowest.

Yeah, really, start that way.

And if you *really* want to go the nikon path, do the same thing. Cheapest body possible, go for the lenses, then when you have all the lenses you want, upgrade the body if you want to/can afford to.

There is at least one thread asking about the D40 every day, and you actually took the time to post all that shit? Kill yourself.

D70 is a great camera. I dont know about prices of lenses in UK but i would have sold you my old 18-70mm for 200 Australian... it's shot exactly 782 shots... then i got the 18-200 nikkor... which i'm selling now since i use the 17-55 nikkor for almost everything

so yeah go look at the A100 and ignore the following shitstorm that me saying this always brings, its better than the D40 by miles and you can get the kit lense for 350 iirc, if you are lucky you can get the 18-200 kit instead of the base lense which is good.

*sits and waits for shitstorm*

no shitstorm, but i think you've missed an important point. The OP's Budget.

Well like I said, I wouldn't mind going higher.

Just thinking about how much I can make in the next coupla' months before I go to Berlin.

yeah but the Alpha will blow the budget a fair bit. if you're willing to go higher you might as well get the D80.

Too high there.

I guess my question is: For a beginner is it worth getting a 18-55 with the D70, or just grabbing the D40 with the kit lens?

Arent the A-100 on par with the D80 price wise? too lazy to check.

D70 with the 18-55 or D40 with 18-55 kit lens?

Easy. D70. It's a great camera to learn the mechanics on. But honestly, avoid the 18-55 if you can and grab a 18-70. Not that expensive but the quality is remarkable.

If you're going to get a D70, get a D70s OR *make sure* the D70 has already been serviced by nikon for the BGLOD and/or CF reader problems.

hmm yes the A100 is more expensive than i realised (i didnt buy mine in england) but it might get some price dropping with the A700 out now.

Its worth looking at if you find a decent deal but otherwise yes it may be out of your price. As a bonus used lenses are cheaper for it.
