Should I sell my Canon 18-55mm kit lens and put a nifty fifty on there?
>> Anonymous

If you're not down with the NiftyFifty, you're an America-hating communist. You're not an America-hating communist...are you?

1.4 is beautiful

This. I'd suggest the 28/2.8, the 35 is kinda long for most people and a one-stop push is almost always fine. I think it's cheaper, too.

As for the 50/1.8, get that, too. $80. Will work perfectly as a two-lens set. Try to get around to a 20mm and a tele zoom of your choice, and maybe an 85mm if you need reach indoors and you're set.

Where is the 50mm $80? B&H is 90+5 shipping, my local shop is $100 and I'm new to serious photography so I don't know where to look.

the reviews of the 28/2.8 are not so good, confirm/denie?

It used to be $79.

"Canon USA is in the process of informing U.S. dealers about upcoming price increases on a broad range of its camera gear. Starting May 1, 2008, dealers will pay 3-5% more to Canon for most Canon EF lenses and all Canon EOS and PowerShot accessories (plus all Canon binoculars too). The dealer net on Canon digital SLRs is unchanged.

The price jump is attributed to "rising fuel prices" and "unfavorable exchange rates," says an April 24, 2008 letter from Canon USA to its network of retailers. Canon Canada is also raising the dealer net on a similar range of camera products, starting May 5, 2008.

These price changes may or may not be occurring in other world regions; each Canon sales company makes these types of price adjustments independently."

Don't know. But decide for yourself if you like the lens:

http://flickr.com/search/?q=canon+28%2F2.8&ss=2&s=int
http://flickr.com/search/?s=int&ss=2&w=all&q=canon+28%2F2.8+portrait&m=text (Adding "portrait" to the search just makes it easier to find images at wide aperture, to see how it is there and see the bokeh.)

Just look at a ton of pictures and make the call yourself: do you like it? Will it suit your work?

Lens choice is subjective; test charts be damned.

NO
do not sell the kit lens to buy the nifty fifty. get the fifty and keep the kit lens.

ive got both and can garauntee you will get more use out ofa zoom lens. even though the fifty is freaking awesome [although very cheap quality]

If you can't scrape together $80 to buy the 50 without selling your kit lens then you have bigger things to worry about. Seriously - $80 is chump change for a lens.

The 28mm is a fair lens. I have no complaints about it. It's certainly a value as a wide prime. The best thing about it is the focusing ring design and the metal mount. When put on AF, you can freely turn the ring without worrying about harming any mechanical gears inside unlike the 50mm.

The 28/2.8 isn't FTM, the 1.8 is but that's more than double the price.

Do not sell the kits lens. You do not want 50mm to be the only thing you have.
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
BETTER IDEA: sell kit lens, buy a 50mm, save a little more and buy another prime that's appropriate for your usage.

who the fuck would want to buy a used kit lens???

someone that wants a kit lens cheaper than new and secondhand.

who would want to buy a lot of what sells second-hand? One person's trash is another person's treasure or something like that.

Delightfully rugged and well-built, yet the £70 pricetag makes it very replaceable.

Enjoy forking over another £300 when you break the only-slightly-better-but-not-worth-the-extra-money 1.4, folks.
