Hey /p/

The following is a question related to a Photography website im helping build...

Does anyone know of another word for what i'm calling "human gentrification"?

Meaning: "the way that people are being led and persuaded into wearing more and more boring, cheap and ugly clothes, sapping their personal individuality. Mass produced for heavily branded megastores?

Its not just fashion either...

It's called "learning not to be a hipster faggot teenager".

Interesting, seeing as im not a hipster, a teenager, or a faggot im guessing that doesnt apply to me.

Sadly it must mean im surrounded by them... Why doesnt anyone try to change fashion anymore? For gods sake Girls are dressing like Amy Winehouse and guys are dressing like my granddad.

this is so unimportant that there is probably not a word for it. i know i don't care.

Complaining about fashion? Urgh. Ranks pretty low down in the order of things. Come back when you're a grandfather and then you can start complaining about what those darn kids are wearing nowadays and how they keep kicking their balls into your garden.

Fashion cycles around like this all the time.

The only thing more stupid than fashion is crying about it. My "individuality" or mind is not dependant on something as shallow and meaningless as the colour of my shirt or the brand of my shoes. It's a frivolous thing that you either have fun with or ignore.
>> BurtGummer !!RRMHFHglFsy
>>275329

while i agree that focussing independently on fashion would be somewhat "shallow" what i am speaking about is a lack in human conciousness concerning the the things that are being fed to them as "culture" and "fashion" .

Human ignorance leads to a nanny state with nanny media telling you whats good for you.

"Cultural homogenization" is not the same as people buying cheap clothes from megastores. Not unless you are a moonbat.

Burt, could you expand on this thing as a whole, and this:

>Its not just fashion either...

>>275323
Doesn't quite catch the whole of the phenomena. The various twentieth-century totalitarianisms were big on some cultural homogenization, but all of them were of course in the direct service of state power and not capital.

It also misses the "slumming" element mentioned in>>275317, the deliberate (fuck me, I'm sounding like a Marxist) flight from put-together, bourgeois aesthetics to a pseudo-bohemian set.

Ok,

In the UK at the moment there is a definite problem concerning human awareness. This is best defined by fashion, but extends to other facets of life.

In fashion: People have unknowingly (or ignorantly) accepted the generic and cheap clothing being fed to them on the High street. They have stopped searching for unique or interesting clothes and have collapsed into a homogeneous collective group, accepting the mass produced garb as "fashionable".

This problem may of stemmed from an economic lull in the UK, or from import expenses. But it has caused people to dress the same, there is no imagination involved. Countries like the US do not experience this problem as severely due to their size (i feel) and wide cultural spread. Strangely though, japan (a reasonably small country) Constantly changes its fashions...

Oh we in America experience this, though we cycle faster. In traditional cultures, trend cycling was a much slower. This is how you can pick out some form of dress, food, or music in these cultures that identify solely to that culture and have for hundreds of years or more. It helps build community and maintain a feeling of closeness, connectedness, and meaning.

In America our culture is centered around a constant cycling of information, trends, and as a result, the "culture." Our culture is one of rejecting the trends of yesterday for what is "cool" right now. It's a direct product of branding of consumer goods. The corporations must make a profit for their shareholders each quarter, so it is in their interests to convince us that in certain cases aesthetic changes are enough to warrant rejection of the old for the new. In other cases you have built-in product life cycles, where they are designed to break after so much use. This is called "planned obsolescence." We are all consumers, our "culture" is a disposable one. We all look different, but we're all the fucking same narcissistic, shallow, destructive wal-mart, mall-loving fucks.

Hope this clears things up for you!

Yes, but never before have those fashions been focussed toward a love for uniform, shabby, uninspired clothing.

Very little is done by big brands to create bold or exiting clothing. The text and numbers on this tshirt have no relevance, they are simply meant to imitate the superdry brand style.

Read more history. Social conformity was much more oppressive in the past. If you weren't basing your wild assumptions on your own limited experiences (and seemingly unhealthy obsession with fashion) during your teen and early twenties years then you'd realise this.

Besides, anyone involved in any economy (which is to say everyone) is a consumer, and everyone no matter how many Che shirts and No Logo shoes they own is a run of the mill consumer in a contemporary developed economy.

Well, ok, but ill make it brief because your pissin me off. huuuh, This effect is also felt in other industries such as music and film.

In film: the British film industry suffers from the same lack of funds and interest that the the fashion industry does. Britain cannot (generally) afford to produce films on the scale that America can, and therefore we reach out to other countries for funding.

As this doesn't occur as regularly or grandly in fashion, we suffer from a watered down fashion culture.

In Music: The effect is more prevalent in music, British music culture has become more and more focussed on So-called "indy bands" who continue to forward the same old styles we were listening to 5 years ago. Franz Ferdinand anyone? Because they are now easy to promote and slide into the already saturated "scene" easily, promoters have no problem selling it to an already overwhelmed populace.

Phew, had enough bullshit yet?

I meant the term there, it just seemed to be very appropriate and defined exactly what OP was thinking.

As for Starbucks, I'm going to be drinking a lot of coffee so i decided after going to all the big chains that I prefered their coffee and stuck with it. The bonus to this is getting to drink the same shit in billions of countries worldwide! I would certianly be a consumerist, but not part of the consumer mass.

So anyway, i'm loosing my God of Trolls status? NONE OF THAT.

Lack of funds and interest from who or what? People still buy clothes, so the market and money is still there. Unless there's a huge nudist movement driving them out of business that I haven't heard about....

>Britain cannot (generally) afford to produce films on the scale that America can, and therefore we reach out to other countries for funding.

Always been this way. Boo hoo. Doesn't matter. TV and radio was always what the UK was more successful with, thanks to its BBC early on. Hollywood always had the cinema covered more than the UK. People aren't going to invest millions in a movie unless they've a chance at profit and they'll go with a safe bet as they don't want to end up as street bums. No real change there. You'll still get small time productions, so pure art is still made for those that seek it.

>As this doesn't occur as regularly or grandly in fashion, we suffer from a watered down fashion culture.

Always been this way. I've even seen medieval examples. Cry me a river. Influences from abroad happen all the time. USA gets influences from abroad and so does Japan. Doesn't matter a damn. Wear what you like for all I care.

Guess what? Not everyone listens to the garbage pop idols or chart music like the teens you love to lord over. Many other genres are going just fine even now in their niche. If you don't like it then buy elsewhere. Lots of garbage has always sold well with good marketing long before you were born. People like the pop stuff and will always like the pop stuff, just as few people have the taste for truly good classical music and want to listen to the cacophony of some string jangler. Few people appreciate great art. Most people crave burgers rather than fine meal by a top chef. Dry your eyes. People like these things. That is why they buy them and will continue to do so. Nothing wrong with that. It's their money.

PROTIP FOR LIFE: LURK MORE

Things have been this way for years and years. Long before you were born. Will be long after you die in the misty future. There was no high point in your life time for these things. There was no decline in your time for you to observe. Just "student dorm room and weed" level philosophy. Especially with the grandiose way you've dressed such meaningless and minor issues up. "OH NO SOMEONE IS WEARING A PRINTED TEE AND LISTENING TO A BAND I DON'T LIKE!"

"DECLINE OF THE WORLD!!!!!1111one"

"It's better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you're a fool, than to open your mouth and confirm their suspicions."

I agree, I think you'll find that for a lot of people, music is just to fill in the silence, so they pic whatever they here the most, to quote Stewie Griffin "again, I like repetition!".

OK so it comes down to the fact(:-o) we are all pretty similarily built both physically and mentally, there really are more similarities than differences when you go from Joe A to Joess B, so why does it surprise you that some things appeal to the masses? Is it a massive sign of social decline that most people sleep on there side or wipe there asses from front to back? Why dont more people sleep on their heads or wipe with a spinning motion to show their 'individuality' or 'uniquness' for the sake of trying to prove to themselves that they are important and matter to the world. Meh, this shit should be in /r9k/.

tl;dr everyone is the same (statistically speaking) so don't be surprised if they dress/act/choose the same shit.
