When was this exactly? My Asahi (Pentax) "Macro-Takumars", a 50mm f/4 and a 100mm f/4, were both built around 1968-72. Those were AoCO's professional-grade lenses, not no-name consumer stuff. They carry the Macro name, yet they only go up to 1:2.
I don't doubt that _someone_ defined macro as 1:1 magnification, but it certainly was never a universal definition.
