Flash comes in very useful for macro. Especially when you are stopping down a lot for the DOF. Upping the ISO means more noise and that's something that is best avoided until you have to.
You can get plenty great pictures in sunlight though. Don't think you have to get a flash if you are hard up. There are folk who never use flash for it by picking the right days to go out for it.
Continuous lighting is a bad choice for outdoors as it'd have to be big and bright to match a flash and that means carrying a lamp and batteries to power it. It also means you are going to scare the shit out of everything around you with this bright and hot beam of light blinding everything. It's okay for indoors, but not a good choice for outdoors like your first picture. There are options for that kind of thing, but I don't think they are ideal for anyone.
