Dear 4chan,

I am looking to buy a very good digital camera. I have heard that the Canon EOS Rebel XTi is a great buy, and I've seen it going for $900. What do you think of it?

Go to a camera store and try it out!

try it out. always try it out. Personally, i like the XTi features but prefered a nikon D80 because i like the feel and grip better. but, it's all about personal choice, hand size, etc.

i agree completely; it's hard to hold the smaller rebel body comfortably

The size of the Canon is enough to make you buy a Nikon D80 instead? Is it really that big an issue?

Have you ever used a proper SLR or DSLR? the size makes a HUUUGE difference, the ergonomics of a camera and it's comfort in your hands actually mean quite alot, think about it. You have to hold your camera all the time and the comfort level does actually matter alot.

It's for that exact reason why i chose my D70s over the 350D, even THOUGH i had set out to buy a canon. As soon as i held both cameras i my hands... i just could not cope with the flimsy plastic feel the 350D offered... i held one with an attached 70-200 2.8 L glass lens.. i felt like the camera was going to snap off. The 400D wasnt that much different.

But remember, it's personal preference, doesnt make the camera any worse.

I currently use a Canon Rebel SLR. Is it the same body on the DSLR?

i'm pretty sure it's the same basic frame, yes.

But isn't the Rebel made from a metal frame ? that's what i remember about it... that made it much more sturdy and felt like a proper camera.

Rebels are plastic.

They're great if you're a beginner.

$900 camera for a beginner? if that's a beginner camera, how much does an "expert" spend on one? i can't imagine

$2,000 upwards?

use some film before you taint your mind with digital amateur bullshit

using digital instantly lowers your skill by a huge amount.

buy a pentax k1000 or similar metal body 35mm

OH WOW HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH THE FILM IS GOD THREAD!

It's not a matter of whether digital or film is superior, it's a matter of cost. A K1000 is way more camera than a digital rebel could ever hope to be, for a lot less money. Spending $900 for a beginner camera is stupid.

I have a film camera that I like very much. If I had another spare room in my house, I would be setting up a darkroom, but I lack the space. And as a college student who isn't an art major, I don't have access to a darkroom here. Instead, I'm going to use Photoshop as my darkroom, since I'm already very good at it.

Yes, K1000 is one of the best choices for a beginner. A very good, robust, full-mechanical body that gives you everything you need to learn the basics. And it will be a while before you start feeling like you need more. Go for it, this will be one of your best invested 30 bucks.
