If focal length would be "whatever" no one would use anything except 50mm F1.8.

I think the point Jay Ann's making is just that the benefits of f/1.8 outweigh the inconvenience of being stuck at a mild telephoto for him and/or her, not that focal length makes no difference at all.

Having spent a good long while with Canon's 50mm f/1.8 as my main lens, I'm inclined to agree. I've got the 35mm f/2.0 now which I use most of the time, but the 50mm still has an honored spot in my camera bag for when I need fast telephoto.
