Picked up a camera (Canon PowerShot A570 IS) really cheap a couple weeks ago and been trying to take some photos.

Here's some moar: http://flickr.com/photos/13753643@N02/

I walk around my place for an hour or two and take 200 pictures, and then there's maybe one... that doesn't make me wanna puke.

Halp! How does one find nice things to take pictures of?

Try taking photos of the things around you with interesting angles. From your photos, it would also help if you were closer to some of your subjects.

The issue is that every closer up photo I take seems so bland and not interesting at all (not at all when I make it though, just afterwards on the computer). For example I found those huge old trees that had all those messages carved in their bark, and it look really nice, so I took a couple pictures but they just look like crap.

Duh.

Look for nice light.

Use the rule of thirds.
Look for interesting contrasts in color, light, texture, etc
Angles are good, but don't overuse them.
Don't be afraid to get on the ground or get dirty to take a decent picture.
Go get a damn $10 Basics of Photography-type book at a bookstore.
Fucking Google it, if all else fails.

Any books you recommend?

What sort of photography do you want to do?

Just walk around. Your camera is small enough to easily have with you all the time, and when something comes up, you'll be ready.

On your Flickr, "Treeline" is good and "Stripes" is really good. Everything else is sort of meh.

Alright, I'll go to the library and get a couple beginner books.

Thanks! Stripes was my first photo I actually liked.

Not knowing what sort of photography I want to do that's part of the problem I guess, but yeah I keep my camera usually with me so I can be fairly spontaneous. :) I enjoy most of the stuff posted on ffffound.com, kinda not so standard stuff, I mean that stock photo stuff and DA needle-through-tongue shit makes me cry.

"Lurk moar" or whatever they say around here. This is like the third instance of this question on this board at this very moment.

With composition, look for Balance and Relationship...Symmetry is not enough.

Rule of thirds can and will only take you so much, don't be afraid to go beyond. Any rule is only there as a guideline.

Do familarise yourself with the technical side of photography, Aperture, Exposure and anything associated with it.

Knowing the technical grants you alot of freedom for creativity.
