So i've recently been thinking about getting a camera to do sum snappin with. I am looking for a non-SLR cause I am a poor college bastard and everything else is omfgexpensive and bulky.
I've done a bit of research and have come to a conclusion: Kodak and Samsung suck. Canon and Casio are pretty good. Nikon is out of my league.
The only problem is the price.
What is the best digital non DSLR under 200 bucks? Maybe I can wait a week till I get paid a little more and go to like 250 or something. It would like to have decent shutter control, ISO standards, image quality, etc.
Am i asking too much?

Camera in the picture is what I was gonna get, but found out it sucks.

Actually, Casio is pretty good and Nikon is pretty horrible. But yeah, Canon and Sony (and Casio) are best. Probably in that order. OP was fairly good in his assessment.

As for a specific camera, I'd recommend Canon S2 IS or, if you're lucky (for under $200) S3 IS. Any expensive Sony cam in your budget is probably good too, but beware of the dreaded memory stick. The Casio EX-V7/V8 is good too, though it's more of a "do it all" camera instead of anything semi-professional.

Question: are you willing to process raw files?
Basically open up the file with Photoshop, tweak it a little, and then be able to use it like a normal file? It offers more control and better image quality, but it takes more time.

If so, I'd encourage you to look at the Panasonic FZ8 and LX2. The newer FZ18 has a wider lens, but it isn't as good otherwise.

The reason I say this is because the Panasonics are great little cameras, but the JPEG files that come out of them normally look horrible; to get good results with any of them, one has to use the raw files.

I'd also look at the different Ricoh models.

I personally wouldn't waste my time with doing all that. I owned a Panasonic (TZ3) and it was a great cam, but somewhat unstellar quality. Meanwhile, Canon and Sony pictures look amazing right out of the camera, in jpg format.

I was gonna shoot in RAW anyway precisely because I want to be able to shoop it. But I do like out of box functionality for the rare occasion this anon has a social event.

yes, it does have noise but honestly you cant get any better on any P&S without some sort of post processing.

OP here
It's 2 am. I've got to go to bed. I will relay what the people at the store say (Troy, Ohio, USA is the closest camera store to me) and what I buy tomorrow.
Who knows, I may actually shoot something and put it here for all to see. Wouldn't that be just luvrey?

Thank you all from the bottom of my tired heart

you have much to learn.

buy a secondhand F30 then.
also, $400 does seam a little steep since the F31, F40 and F50 came out after the F30. (I got mine when it came out, so i expected the price to drop by then lol so i suppose your right).

What is this appreciative sincerity? My mind... cannot grasp.... it.

I'd recommend getting something in Canon's PowerShot A-series rather than the SxIS series. Same image quality, cheaper, much smaller package.

The only downside is lack of zoom range, but my experience has been that I find the wide-normal range leads to more interesting pictures than the tele end of the world anyway, and pocketability means that you're more likely to have it on you and therefore more likely to get the shot.

who the fuck does long steady exposures with a high ISO?
