I has a Vulvia Otherwise Anonymous !R09./old82
Long time no see, /p/.

So one sunny Saturday this July I decided to give slide a try for the first time, the slide being Velvia 100 no less. Upon receipt of a developed roll, once I finished masturbating furiously over TEH COLOURS THEY ARE EVERYWHERE, I made a huge note to myself that this shan't have been the last time.

Although next time I might opt for Astia instead.

All photos from in and around the Howth Harbour. Shot with a humble 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor, scanned on Coolscan 5000, postprocessed minimally (mostly limited to Auto Levels).

And just BTW, where is Teus? Where is ac? I don't recognise any of you people, aside from a single spotting of eku recently.

Lesson learned #1: shooting Velvia outside direct sunlight is a waste.

Lesson learned #2: Velvia is a harsh mistress, she will love you for spot-on exposure, but missing it by 1/3 EV and more will render the frame beyond repair. Forget about CW, do not trust The Matrix.

Lesson learned #3: dynamic range isn't as bad as common stories seem to make it, I had people look at those pictures and go WTF HDR. None of that or other photoshoppery, the secret is getting the exposure right *twice* - when shooting, and when scanning each frame carefully with custom settings.

Lesson learned #4: Velvia can make even this rainy, windy, foggy, cold and damp rock seem like a pretty place.

Lessons not related to pictures, BTW.

*sigh* I miss fooling around with Velvia. I need to figure out how to use my f100.

Also, I finally finished gathering the required gear, so soon I will be diving deep into developing B&W again.

Good news: less hyperturboneon colours.

Bad news: more of my photos on /p/.

This one is awesome; reminds me of that Cartier-Bresson.

Just go out and shoot some shots, I'm sure you'll get used to it eventually.. Most of it is just trying. I'd love to see more film shots from you.

Welcome back OP, though I do not seem to remember your trip. sadly, AC has left and I haven't seen Teus post in quite some time. /p/ has changed for the worst, some say summer, some say other. Love the first picture, I definiatly need to shoot some slide soon.. The others are a little on the boring side due to subject, but at least you enjoyed shooting slide.

Thanks for the welcome. That's sad to read about /p/, and from what little lurking I had a chance for over the very busy for me past year, it didn't start with the start of this summer either. At least it's not as spectacular as with /b/.

Lack of life in my photos is something I notice too, and it bothers me a lot. Confidence to stick the lens in people's faces is not something that comes easily to me, but I'm working on it. Not that I mind good nature/landscape shots too much, but true and alive street photo is the ideal.

Let's not get too excited here. Thanks though. :D

It's my pleasure. It's hard to just stick a lens up in someone's face, I know. Have you tried getting a small compact or RF, and shoot from the hips? Or if there are more people or things around, aim it at someone else first, and when you see something happening around your subject, re-aim and shoot. Most of it is just "Do it!" though. You can have lively shots without people though, it's just harder. If you look at Vincent's panos, they look very lively, yet there's rarely anything that is not static.

Nah, I'm just taking small steps with SLR, putting into practice all advices posted here or elsewhere which I find to fit my style. Shooting during public events is what works for me in getting comfortable pointing the camera at people at point-blank range, as nobody questions you there.

On the other hand, after having a chance to see a workmate go around with his M6 without a single stare from the bypassers (or subjects!), I'm starting to wonder if there's a point in employing an SLR for this kind of job.

An SLR works fine, no worries. It might cause a little bit more attention, but mostly it's the photographer's attitude that causes people to notice a lot. If you're nervous, it'll be easy to see, and you'll look suspicious.

Teus has moved on to greener pastures - I see him post at RFF every so often.

I'd congratulate you on the awesome colors but then this kind of saturated slide film tends to pull colors out of nowhere, like you mentioned in>>223917.
