this is actually a sad partial truth in today's age of cost-you-nothing digital pictures. i mean, one roll of 36 pictures is like 3 bucks. A good DSLR can take those 36 pictures in a few minutes.
I did find that a good compromise, though not a solution, is having your film processed, but don't buy any prints. Film processing is really cheap compared to processing and getting pictures back. that way you can pick and choose which pics to make prints later, or print them yourself, which I did, but only in B&W. good thing the ol college has darkrooms available.
of course, just moving on to digital would probably be cheapest in the long run.
