Sony Digital SLR with Zoom Lens (A100K)

643$CAD

LEANING TOWARDS THIS ONE. Because it offers the best features but it's also the priciest.

OP here, the rest are over 700$, which is my limit.

The Nikon D40x is useless and the Canon Rebel XTi kit is 742$CAD.

Nikon D80 and Canon 40D are too expensive.

Get the XT body only + the 18-55 IS?
>> Anonymous
>>106375

Isn't the A100 a step above the XTi, so in turn better than the XT?

>>106378

Don't really want to get used gear.

>>106380

XT body is 475$CAD and then I'd have to order the 18-55 IS online which is 200$CAD.

That's the same price as the A100.

>>106382

You said that the body + lens was 396$CAD.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
The A100 has the best specs but its lense linup is smaller than canon/nikon but it still has everything you need (ie a cheap 50/1.7 2nd hand) and as a non pro photographer the range provided is awesome.

its got cheaper 2nd hand stuff and film cameras that use the same mount (minolta dynax).

oh its a sony (minolta really) so no one likes it esp as its better than every other camera in this thread.

>>106384

Oh that's weird. The XT kit is listed 2 times, one is 396$ and the other is 594$. Maybe the first one is a refurbished or something.

But the XT body is what I said, 475$

Get the XT kit then. Sell the lens for $100, buy the newer 18-55 IS.

If I get those old cheap lenses, are they manual focus? I want autofocus.

And you said the lens lineup is smaller, in which way?

I don't want superzooms I don't think, just wide for groups.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>106399
everything on the works 100% autofocus etc 1/2 the new lenses work on film too.

There max wide is 11-18 which is fine (altho expensive) and everything from that to 500 f8 reflexes (with autofocus, not that anyone else has that)

CZ lenses and old G lenses are also stunning in quality.

basically its better than any other low end offering but its a sony...

you choose.

If you are going to go with one of the smaller ones then go with Pentax rather than Sony.

Pentax has a LOT of older lenses that are pretty damned good.

It's not Sony hate. It's Pentax LOVE.

Auto Focus is nice, but the more important question to ask for old lenses is whether or not the built in exposure meter will work. That has caused me so much frustration with my d40x

its a shame sonyminolta is BETTER tho.

enjoy your fanboyism.

Are those old Minolta lenses on the used market or are they available new? And are they cheaper than new lenses? How much?

I really have a thing about used gear.

Pentax K10D body is $630 on Amazon with free S&H and $100 mail-in rebate (so it'd be $530). You can easily pick up a used 50mm prime for under $100 (usually around $50). Heck, you can usually pick up a "free" K1000 film SLR when you buy lenses through CraigsList.

The controls, etc are worth the extra money if you go for the Pentax. Of course, I'd take ANY Nikon DSLR over the D40/D40x. I'd go with the D80 (body only), but it's likely out of your budget. You can sometimes find D80s out there from people who are upgrading to a D200 (now D300).

As for Canon, go for the XT until you can afford a 20D/30D/40D. Keep in mind, though, that some of the lenses won't work with the full-frame DSLRS. Of course, Nikons have the same problem, but even more so since the inception of the D40.

I bought a K10D a few months back because it was the only sub-$1,000 DSLR that didn't feel like a toy in my hands. The D80 was a second choice, but I don't look back. I like the D80 and it felt similar in my hands, but the K10D just felt a bit better and I liked the in-camera shake reduction (though I prefer to use a tripod when I can... the in-lens shake-reduction is superior, I know, but I wanted something that would work on ALL lenses) and the weather sealing. The battery/vertical grip is awesome, too. The K10D is really built like a tank, which makes me feel more comfortable taking shots I wouldn't have otherwise risked (awkward angle for my body, shooting in the rain, etc... though I do try to protect the lens).

>You can easily pick up a used 50mm prime for under $100 (usually around $50).
You can pick up a brand-spanking-new Canon 50/1.8 for under $100...

>As for Canon, go for the XT until you can afford a 20D/30D/40D. Keep in mind, though, that some of the lenses won't work with the full-frame DSLRS.
The 20D/30D/40D series isn't full frame. You only have to worry about EF-S vs. EF incompatibility if you're planning on dropping the mad chedda for a 5D or a 1D-series.

>Of course, Nikons have the same problem, but even more so since the inception of the D40.
Nikon's problem is actually the opposite. With Canon, the lower-end cameras have a larger selection of lenses than the higher end ones. With Nikon, the lower-end cameras can't autofocus on most lenses or even meter with some of the older ones.

(The upside of which is that you can mount the really old Nikon lenses on even the D40 and use it, as long as you're okay with focusing and metering manually)
