I have a bunch of really nice Canon FD-mount lenses that I used with a Canon T70. I decided it's about time I get a digital SLR, but obviously the FD mount is outdated. A lot of my friends have Nikon D40's which I like a lot. Since I don't want to get rid of all these good lenses, is there a way I can get them onto an affordable EF mount camera like the Rebel XT (or even a D40, but that's probably too much of a stretch)?

A D40 is too much of a stetch? Seriously? They're new for like... $400. Less if you shop Nikon Refurbished.

I'd recommend a D50 or D70 though, to get more AF support.

As for adapting those lenses for EF, almost everything I've read about FD-EF adapters says don't do it. I believe you lose the ability to focus to infinity, similar to extension tubes. You can, however, adapt Nikon lenses to Canon rather reliably, but that doesn't really help you.

Sorry - I didn't mean a D40 as a stretch pricewise, I meant it'd be a stretch to get a FD lens on it.

Oh, right. Yeah, you're pretty much boned in that department. But you're pretty much boned if you go Canon too, so I wouldn't let your current lens lineup play any part in choosing a DSLR.

Yeah, I kinda knew Canon was pretty crappy in the DSLR respect. Is a D70 that much better? I've heard the D40 has better picture quality - is the AF support enough to make it worth getting a used D70? I'm new to digital photography, so I don't really know how much I'll end up relying on AF.

It depends, really. The viewfinders are smaller, so some people don't like manually focusing on them. It will be tough with a D40 in all probability, but the D70 should be fine. So do get the D70, however you want to focus.

I'll definitely consider that. Do you use a D70?

The only cameras that can use FD lenses without losing infinity focus and image quality are Olympus 4/3, but that requires replacing or heavily modifying the mounting flange and is hardly worth it.

Yeah, like how Nikon's low end won't autofocus and meter on old lenses?

In fact, those same old Nikon lenses will meter on Canon bodies.

If you're going Nikon, you need new lenses.

If you're going Canon, also need new lenses.

The Nikon D70 is archaic.

Don't get it.

I'd be seriously surprised if the D40 had better picture quality over a D70. The D70 is in all regards a "better" camera body, and they both have the same resolution. I don't see why a D40 would have superior image quality.

I'd go D70 regardless, because whatever loss of image quality may occur will be unnoticeable. There's still a lot of wedding pros in my area who shoot D70s. Probably for the 1/500th flash sync, mostly.

yes, about the superior body, but most people like the JPG output of the D40 very much

so in that respect, yes it's got better rendition than even the d200

I dont know anything about the D40, but I have used the D70 quite a bit. Its a great camera, but be prepared for quite a lot of noise on even low ISO. 400 will give you suprisingly much noise and 800 is close to unacceptable. The house is rather clumpy, and the button layout and menu system is not as good as on more recent Nikon models (D80). The screen is also very small, and is pretty much useless for judging pictures.

a D40 is a great camera if you're not serious about photography and just want a super P&S. There's also the Canon 1000D which is much better than the D40. This is coming from a D80fag, btw. Canon's lower end is like the PowerShot A-series now.

>I don't see why a D40 would have superior image quality.
Pro tip: Technology advances over time. The sensor design in the D40 is roughly two years newer.

Every time they upgrade the resolution in a sensor, they have to work to keep the noise levels the same with the smaller photosites. Those technological advances go the other way, too--I.e., they can make the lower-resolution sensors less noisy.

The D40 is less noisy at high ISO than the D70.

You can, to a certain extent (focusing to infinity requires modding the lens), use FD lenses on 4/3rds cameras (eg. olympus) with the dandelion adapter. Check out http://oly43club.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=311
