i have a Nikon D80 with 18-55, 50mm and 70-300 non VR and a SB-800

i'm going to sell everything, except the 50mm and the flash for $700 and buy a D700

this is made of win

I don't think you can get enough money to buy a D700 if you sell that.
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
No it's not. All that is more useful than 50mm, SB800 and D700. In fact, replace the SB-800 with the SB-600 and you've got the set I'm aiming to get.

nah, $700 is just a nice down payment i get from selling my old stuff

still gotta put down OVER 2000 for the D700 :[ would sell the flash but i need it

>>259268All that is more useful than 50mm, SB800 and D700

lol wut?

oh, you mean my 18-55, 50mm and 70-300 is more useful than a D700 with just a 50mm

whatever works for you, dude

the only time i can use the 18-55 and 70-300 is outdoors in daylight or indoors with a flash, which is really not my style at all

a true 50mm works for me for 8 out of 10 situations and i get to keep my flash when i need it

do it dude, take lots of pictures when you get that D700. Maybe consider moving up to the 50 1.4, it's built a whole lot better and would feel more at home on the D700 than your 1.8, I think.

meh, keeping my 1.8

3 times the price just for build and doing down to 1.4 and be hazy as fuck? fuck that

There is nothing more useful in photography than a prime of moderate focal length (say, ~35-50mm equivalent.)

OP is being awesome, though personally I'd go for a D300 over a D700 and a wider normal (28mm, for delicious "perfect normal") over what would be a "fifty" on that.

>>259279
I'd actually tell him to get the 50/1.2 you have. IMO, bokeh on all the Nikkor fifties ranges across situations from neutral to distracting except that one, which is in every way a fuckawesome lens, as I'm sure you know and would agree.

But if he wants AF, the f/1.8 should be fine. Save him some money, too, which if he's getting a D700 is probably a good thing.

/P/ fell in love with a fat sow of a lens because it's optimized for really large apertures, because /p/ loves really shallow depth of field, unless it comes from Heavyweather (who actually tends to use it well) for some reason.

>all the Nikkor fifties

Let me rephrase that: all the ones I've seen. I know nothing about some awesome forty year old pre-AI Nikkor 50mm.
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
Oh wow, just remembered D700 is full frame. I had the D300 in mind. Go ahead and enjoy it as a normal lens like it's supposed to be.

Go for it. I'm really enjoying using my 50mm on a F3, haven't shot with my D80 in ages. Though developing costs suck balls.
