Thoughts on F4S? NikoMan
How's it going /p/
There's an F4S, in what seems to be good condition for 300$ on the local Craigslist. What do you guys think of this camera. Any obvious faults in it's design, or problems that these cameras develop? Overall, is it worth the money. Thanks, I appreciate it.

It's worth it, but are you sure you need a camera this huge?

Btw, check the film pressure plate for wear before you buy; it's a pro camera, it may be heavily used even without much wear to the exterior.

I'm not really too aware of the dimensions, I'll look around youtube to see how gigantic this thing is. Is it really a behemoth? And what exactly should I be looking at when examining this pressure plate? Just excess wear and tear?

I think it's one of the best cameras ever made. The only downside is the weight, but unless you're planning on doing long distance backpacking with it, it should be fine.

The control layout is the best I've ever seen on an AF SLR. The AF is fast and accurate, despite being old. It's fantastically reliable. It has great battery life, and uses AA's so you can buy replacements just about anywhere in the world. The metering system is excellent. As I said, just about the only downside is the weight.

I bought one used about four years ago and it had been very abused when I got it. It was obviously a pro's old workhorse as just about everything was very worn. The paint was all but gone, most of the markings were worn off, it had an assortment of dents and scratches, the eyepiece ring was broken off, and it still worked like brand new. Since then I've run probably three or four hundred rolls of film through it without issue.

It's big, but not that big. It's no larger than an F5, D2x, or EOS-1D series. It's about the same weight too. It's just big and heavy when you're comparing it to what most people are used to.

Ah, thanks for the information. Its looking like I'll probably get one. Currently I have my grandfather's old Nikon N8008, and it's really showing it's age. I also found the Autofocus to be absolutely horrid. The only reason why I actually decided to look around was because of the assortment of lenses he left me. Sounds like this would be a really nice choice

Ah alright, I wouldn't have much of a problem with that. I'm not doing any major travel where it will be on my body at all times and show its weight a ton. I just would like a camera that will last for ages, and has a nice interface, which it seems to.

its smaller than my F5, and has a detachable motor drive. But even with the Motor drive, its still manageable, its a fantastic camera.

Alright, well perfect. Sounds like most everyone has great things to say about it. Other than the weight it looks like the only thing I'm going to need to look into is how heavily used it's been.

The motordrive isn't detachable, there's just different size battery packs. The largest nets you the fastest FPS.
>>Any obvious faults
I'd probably go as far to say it's one of the few cameras without any.
Nitpicks- the AF is "outdated". It's fast in good light because of torque, which it has gobs of; not accuracy, I prefer my N90s'. You can't use G lenses outside of P or S.
However, the viewfinder is amazing, the 'HUD' is perfect, control layout is perfect, AIs lenses will matrix meter (if that's important to you).
AF-S lenses (reportedly, I've no experience with that combo) help out a lot with its hamfisted AF

AF aside, it's probably the best MF camera nikon has ever put out (spoilers: F3 negative bias). I remember when they were new and it's amazing to me how cheap they are now.
IT'S A FILM-BEGGAR'S BANQUET!

My old photo instructor Todd Williams had an F4, and I'll be damned if it wasn't the best fucking camera I've ever held. Ugh... it's so, so, so nice. Get it. $300 is a steal.

What've you got against the F3?
>> Anonymous
The best thing about digital is that you can get film slrs like these for less than most of the p&s cameras.

i hauled an F4s with a sigma 24-60mm f/2.8, nikon 85mm f/1.8, and nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 swm ed and about 40 rolls of velvia, and it performed great, i love it. the only downside is if you want bracketing get the control back for it. i have large hands so it fit me perfectly. you may also want to pick up a grid screen for it.

The 'HUD', that's pretty much it but a deal killer for me. I've been through a few even, because I'll forget how much it annoys me and buy another. The non-standard hotshoe and low sync are just icing on the haetcaek. It's not a bad camera, I beat the everloving piss out of the ones I had. They took it and asked for more. There's just other bodies that get out of the way more effectively.
I'd have an F3 over an AE-1 any day of the week, though.

Belive me , its not foul in desine, cant be- its a pro camera.
