Hey /p/als.

I found this camera in the basement. Is this awesome y/n.

Filename is the model number on the back of the camera.
>> Anonymous
no. nikon sells 35mm cameras like this for $30. Albeit a nice addition to a collection.
>> Anonymous
I'm new here if it wasn't obvious. How's this camera for someone probably just getting into photography?
>> Anonymous
>>273825

Just dandy.
>> Anonymous
You guys are swell ^_^

What can you tell me about the lens? It says Vivitar Series 1 35-85MM 1:2.8
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
it sucks. vivitar has the worst lenses out of all the third party manufacturers.
>> SAGE
>>273845
even worse than Industar?
>> Anonymous
>>273841

The Series 1 35-85/2.8 was a solid lens for its time and a good alternative to the pro glass, although it's not up to the standards of modern lenses. It's quite sharp stopped down to f/4, but f/2.8 is usable. Contrast wasn't great.

It'll be fine for a learner.

take a test roll and find out for yourself i don't think that it can be that bad, i have a 30 year old nikkormat that still works fine
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>273847
Clearly you have no idea what you're talking about.

>>273845
You too. Vivitar made few, if any lenses on its own. To judge the quality of a Vivitar lens you have to figure out who actually made it, which is sometimes indicated by the first two digits of the serial.

wats the mega-pixel on that?
>> Anonymous
>>273913
The lens cap says Vivitar Series 1 and the serial number is 22504007. I don't suppose there's a big ol' serial number database I could look at?

I poked around the basement a bit more and found a worn in croc-leather case which had an AW-1 auto winder and another device that says shutter speed range.

I'm pretty excited to keep looking around. Apparently this camera belonged to my late-grandfather who was a photography buff. He also had another Nikon and a Leica as well. When my mom and dad were dating my grandmother gave my dad the cameras as gifts.

um...dude? With that serial number the lens is a Leica with Vivitar branding. You must be trolling because that lens is worth a couple million easy.
>> Anonymous
>>274024
My first response was to say "no you must be trolling me" but that would make me sound even worse so I'm going to go take a tagged picture to show you.

Where are you getting the info on the serial number from though?

>>274027

I'm j/k. I can't do that to someone....even if it is just another anon.
>> Anonymous
>>274028

That was a solid troll.

22 indicates the lens was made by Kiron.

Hm yes, "a couple million" easy did seem like a bit much :3

I took some pixx anyway though. Here's the MILLION DOLLAR LENS...

And here's all the stuff I found. Leather carrying case not pictured as it wasn't showing up well and it flakes off on the bed.

Post more pics of the thingy with shutter speeds written on it. It looks far too old to match the EL2 and could be worth something.

Camera manuals were pretty fucking awesome in the 70s.

Goddamn, that's a F-36 motor drive for the original Nikon F. Not sure what it's worth, though. Neat piece if it still works.
>> Anonymous
>>274110

Did some more checking, looks like you're missing the power pack/grip for the motor drive. Poke around and see if you can find it!

This makes me want to start another PEOPLE WHO HOLD THEIR CAMERA LIKE THIS MAKE ME RAGE thread.

I talked to my dad about it a bit more. My grandfather was a doctor and when he died my grandma had to sell a lot of stuff to keep the family afloat for a while. She got badly taken advantage of in that respect; my grandfather had a whole collection of Leica and Hasselblad cameras and no doubt my grandpa's friends downplayed their value and importance, or simply didn't return cameras he had loaned to them ;__;

Like that pic. It just reminded me of the other way of holding it that makes me RAGE.

As much as I'd like a cheap Leica outfit, that's just messed up.

It happens more often than you'd hope. I've heard it told from both sides before...

Just fucking around with the aperture and shutter settings is so much fun, I haven't even got a roll in yet. I'm a full on /p/[whatever domain nickname you guys use]

Hot damn I knew that font was wrong for the EL2. Check this out.

Wow, thanks for the link. I'm a little reticent to sell any more of my grandfather's equipment but unless I can find the second camera lurkan somewhere in the basement I can't really use it can I.
