What does /p/ think of monopods? I've been thinking of getting one because of how much more ocmpact and portable they are then a tripod, but are they really that useful? has anyone had any experience with one?

They help, but essentially it's a crutch for hand-help work anyway. You still need to rely on muscle control to hold the camera still (and if you know anything about trying to hold perfectly still then yoou know it's not possible).

so, it'll help you a little (especially with pans and post-card type shots (especially for film/video), but if you need to take pro quality images, then you should suffer with a quality tripod.

They won't replace a tripod, but they're nice as a supplement. Different tools for different jobs.

Ive been looking into quikpods.

the more expensive kit comes with a mini tripod, that you can attach to the end of the stick. I suggest watching the video.

I also dont see why you can just leave your tripod legs together and use that as a mono pod substitute...

That's always worked well for me so i've never understood the point of a monopod

TBH, monopods have their uses, but are no replacement for a good tripod. Nowadays you can get absolutely tiny, lightweight, portable tripods which are so much better. with monopods... what happens if you want to be in-shot?

For a P&S they aren't that usefull, for a DSLR they become more so, Especially for long telephoto lenses that have a tripod collar on them.

you should invest in a tilt or ballhead for the top if you want to use it for stability, That way you can use your legs as the 2nd and 3rd legs, and have the camera still parallel to the ground.

I love my monopod to death for my longer lens (it double's as a walking stick) I only move up and down, not side to side, so it still gives me the movement that I can't get with a tripod, but keeps my shots pretty steady. I may possibly be the only one it works for, but mine works out great!
