But what he really means is that the black border is taking too much attention to the picture. Black,White,and Red are the strongest colors for the eye and usually the eye goes to that first. Even if you're just mounting your work onto a black board.

So if I was the OP who took thoes pictures, btw nice pics, I would delete the thick boarders.
BTW I'm not an photography major I'm actually illustration but I'm just applying what I learned into photography.)

Back in my younger days when I was doing a lot of ad design, we found black/yellow contrast as the most eye-grabbing, followed by red/white.

I agree its eye-grabbing, but this is to a point where the borders has more weight than your photo.
Instead of following the photo, my eyes follow the borders.
