OK so I'm looking for a good camera. Up until now I've been one of those fags that shoots Spectra and Holga photos and I want to continue to shoot with an "artsy" look with some better equipment. I would prefer to have a DSLR rather than an SLR just because I love to work in photoshop, and the college darkroom I usually use has gotten so crowded with faggots and douchbags that I've decided to abandon it totally.

Recommend a good DSLR for me. I was thinking a Canon XTi. My max price is about $600. I think the local best buy has a Canon XTi for $580.

You want to call Holga artsy and you want the Holga look but you don't want to be a fag...

That's too bad - my university's darkroom is only visited by about 4 - 5 people and I know all of them.

99% of the time it's me, me and only me in there, so it's nice to get somewhere on campus where you aren't surrounded by hundreds of people all the time.

The XTi's a good choice. And $580 is a really good deal for it.

I strongly recommend getting the body-only version and the 18-55 IS rather than going for the kit with the 18-55 II. It'll cost you an extra $100 or so, but the IS is really awesome

Seconded, or (what I'd do): Rebel XT body-only and extra cash spent on 50mm/1.4 lens; better to learn on primes (I think), and you just can't go wrong having a 1.4 live on your camera. You can actually use it to take pictures when it's not high noon in the middle of a sunny field.

Adding in support for ac's suggestion on the IS lens. Advice used to always be to go for the kit lens as it was so cheap, but the 18-55 IS is an even better bargain.

I agree a prime's the thing, but isn't the 50/1.4 a couple hundred bucks? He'd be better off getting an normal prime than a medium telephoto. I think the Sigma 281/.8 is pretty cheap. He'd have to for someone other than Canon if he wanted it to autofcous right, but he doesn't sound especially attached.

28/1.8, not 281/.8. Don't want to give them any ideas for their next monstrous lens.

Sigma 28/1.8 isn't much cheaper then Canon 50/1.4 (if cheaper at all). Also it's HUGE

IF you dont buy a Nikon D70 or D80, you're fucking retarded.
Nikon lenses are far more superior than Canons.
ED Glass is the best we're going to get on any lens in the future. Also, Nikons VR actually works.
Nikon for life, fucker. suck it

Cheap for a 28mm lens; the 50/1.4 isn't cheap for a 50mm lens.

And it was a possibility. He could go for some other 28-35mm lens, depending on what mount he picked. I just listed that one because it'll work on everything.

hey ac, you bought the 18-55 IS lens right? Do you have any examples of it? Is it working well?

And to the OP.

I use the rebel xt and it's a pretty nice deal. At that price the rebel xti looks to be pretty doable as well. I second the 18-55 IS lens, and I would also throw in a recommendation to get the 50mm 1.8

you'll have some overlap, but it's great for night shots, only around 80 bucks, and has better optical abilities at 50mm than the 18-55 has (I believe).

Yep. Pretty much all of the shots in my Flickr stream taken since last Tuesday.

I agree that the 50/1.8 is a damn good idea even if you have the 18-55 IS. Stabilization and a wide aperture are different things, useful for different tasks. f/1.8 won't help you if you want to take a shot of something with reasonable depth of field in low light, and IS won't help you get a faster shutter speed if you want to freeze the motion of something or if you really want a narrow DoF.

Depends on the shot. In general, no. Fiddled with colors and levels on a few, and (obviously) converted to B&W on the ones that are B&W.

No harm in a little self promotion if it's just linking to your gallery. People post up their pictures here all the time, after all. Plus, I'm very nosey.
