I am going along to buy myself a D90 tomorrow morning. I have been saving the cash to get one for over 2 months and now that it's only 1 day away from the purchase I am having second thoughts for some reason.

Does /p/ think this is a good camera? Discuss.

That's pretty much the main reason I am looking to get one, yes.

i still don't understand this gimmick. it must be awkward as fuck to take videos with a dslr. and wouldn't it fry the memory card?

the only good thing about having a dslr that can record video i can think of is that you can use many different lenses with it. either than that it's pretty pointless imo. get a camcorder for video.

You can use other lenses and can get a cinematic depth of field (remember that an APS-C crop is full frame from a movie camera perspective). There's a lot of potential there. Although the two current implementations leave something to be desired in the exposure control department, and the D90 has jellyrolling issues.

What will be really interesting, though, is when Canon or Nikon realizes it would be a good idea to stick a DSLR-size/quality sensor that can do video into a camera shaped like a video camera rather than a DSLR. I suspect this is what Red's going to drop on us soon...

hahaha, oh wow

do yourself a favour and check out some sample videos taken with the d90, specifically videos with rapidly moving subjects

I'd say the video function is pretty useless... I mean OK, the quality is good plus you can use lenses - but seriously, what makes the difference between movies that every jackass can produce and professional ones is sturdiness. And how the fuck is anyone supposed to achieve a sturdy record when using manual focus? It's near impossible. On most lenses the focus ring is way in the front, and even touching it (mind spinning) will shake the picture like some freaking earthquake. It's just that the Body itself is too small to comprehense that lens-shaking.

i remember when ac said the D90 was a credible competitor to the RED

it was hilarious

Get a D300 instead. Pretty much the same price, much better camera (not that the D90 is bad, just don't buy it for the movie mode alone).

i use a Canon and am sort of invested in it, not like hugely invested but enough to not consider switching right now

anyway, i can get my hands on a brand new D80 for like $400-500. should i get one for the lulz?

i have some old manual Nikon lenses, some random telephoto and 2-3 short primes

before you say use the $500 for a Canon lens instead, i'm doing okay with my current kit so i don't need to spend more money on it really. this would really just be for the lulz of having a Nikon kit too

Get it. That way you can be always on winning side in flamewars.

The only winners during a flame war are the ones outside taking pictures.

What if I'm posting my arguments from my iPhone while out taking pictures?

A draw. You win for taking pictures outside, but fail for the iPhone. Balance in all things.

I just bought the D90, I'm no authority but I'm happy with the picture quality and amount of control it gives me. The video is hard to use properly, I guess if you got used to it you could do ok, but I wouldnt expect to see anything other than art-house film noir type short movies being shot on it.

Well, if you don't need any other canon stuff I'd say do it. THis way you'll have the ability to share with both sides. I know right now I wouldn't mind shooting Nikon because the newspaper I am working on right now is mainly Nikon shooters and as a whole have some nice lenses/bodies (including the 400 f2.8)
