SLR or not SLR? Anonymous
Dear /p/,

I am planning on getting a new camera soon. Currently, I have a Sony CyberShot DSC-P100. I have a 1GB memory stick, and I dont want to buy a new memory stick unless I have to.

So...I looked on Sony and they have Digital Cameras and Digital SLR cameras. The regular ones have a higher resolution, but the SLR's cost more and have less resolution. So what is the difference??

Megapixels mean nothing ! Don't fall for marketing tricks. Google "megapixel myth".

Also, Sony sux.

Great.

But WTF is the difference between a regular camera and an SLR?? (besides $400)

The main difference is that you can switch lenses on a SLR, making them more versatile. (If you want to take advantage of that it'll mean spending a lot more money after buying the cam.) Also the sensor is bigger, this means less noise (especially in low-light) and it's easier to get shallow DoF (look it up, google is good for you).
Also, you'll be looking through the lens via a viewfinder, instead of at the display. And don't expect to shoot movie clips with an SLR.

Don't let your memory stick totally dominate your decision making process btw, if you find a nicer camera but it takes compact flash you can probably afford to splurge another $25 on a 1GB card.

really, it depends on what you want.

The digital non-SLRs are a jack of all trades, master of none.

Good still pics ( that any noob can take ) and you can do movies too.

The DSLR - well, once you learn a bit about photography - you can take amazing stills. No movie mode - becouse this is a job for a digital video camera.

Lets compare a DSLR 6mp to a compact point and shoot 10mp

the point and shoot might be able to make a huge image - that has a lot of noise, and is not very good.

the DSLR will have a smaller image, but it will generally be of a lot better qaulity.

That site proves megapixels mean something. They mean all else being equall, you get a better picture. Don't say megapixels mean squat when clearly they do. It's like saying there's no difference between 200 and 800 speed film for still shots. It's more accurate to say megapixels should be a secondary consideration.
