Model Photography - Glamour/Nudes Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
Well, since the NSFW modelling thread was killed (as predicted), let's restart another model-photography advice thread.

As I previously mentioned, I'll be doing a shoot fairly soon of my gf (with a number of friends planned for this summer), and I am basically clueless. I have very little experience with shooting models, let alone glamour/nudes/etc, but would like to end up with something a bit better than the typical "omg noodz" snapshots.

The lens selection that I'll have available along with an Xsi is as follows:
18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS
50mm 1.8

So, /p/? Any tips or suggestions?

Get some good lighting. Find a window she's comfortable being nude near so you can get some natural light in there or go hardcore Strobist and bring your own lighting.

Make her comfortable. Tell her she's pretty. Talk to her about what you're doing and how you're using your camera to make her even prettier.

Get her to relax and stop posing.

Above all else, make sure to post the pictures to /s/ and send us a link.

Well..
- Choose your lighting carefully. If you are shooting outside without any flash and the light isnt right, just stop at once. Dont waste time shooting pics that wont be used. Just drive around to different scenes and shoot untill the lighting is right. One great time to shoot with external flash is just after sunset. At that point you have about 5-10 min (depending on location and date) to shoot with fill flash. After its gone dark, youll need to light up your subject completely with flashes. (I sort of got the idea you dont have three speedlights and pocket wizards?)
- Put your cam in autofocus, use one focus point and aim it at one of her eyes.
Youll probably wanna use the 50mm at about 2.8.
Think about composition, but dont let it controll you too much. I found its best to let that part come naturally. Lighting comes first, and when you got it, you shoot a bunch of pics and quickly find out what comps will work and not. Also, you might wanna shoot low dof anyways.
- If youre shooting with the sun behind the subject, but visible; be sure to use a high f-number to make the sun look "starish" and not like some overexposed smudge.
- Just shoot and learn as you go.
- If you dont have a even one external flash, you should experiment. Your goal would be to light up her face from both sides, without making the eyes look like two black holes.

Alright.

While I would guess that they'd be too harsh, would standard 1000W Halogens (what I've got lying around; used for painting illumination [House painting, walls/ceilings/etc) be usable at all? I'm guessing generally not without diffusing against something (but colors may be horrible?), but I'm really not familiar with lighting humans.

Natural light...hm. I'll think on that. Can't say I can think of a good place that doesn't have a public view (which would make it Verboten), but we'll see.

Ah, but of course. Thanks for the suggestions though.

We'll see about that. It's really up to the subject. I enjoy my sex life, thank you very much. And with those who I'm not having sex with, I enjoy not being hated.

Oh, and thanks for being the first helpful poster.

I use clamp lights with 50, 100, and 150 watt bulbs for lighting. ~$10 each, probably sell them the same place you buy those things.

Clamp them on something low to the ground, point them up and slightly away at a white ceiling (or at some suitable reflector reasonably far away) and you get some pretty nice light. Never shot nudes, though, but I guess it would be the same as anything else.

i just shot my girlfriend nude this weekend for the first time. she laid on the bed in a completely dark room with the nightstand lamp tilted away from her so the bulb/shade were directed onto her. a really amateur and easy setup, but the pictures turned out beautifully. it really is all in the lighting. the angle of the light against the features of her body made for some really nice contrast and shadows. she was skeptical about it, but after seeing the shots she loves it and has already said she will model for me again any time.

I'll definitely be doing at least a few high-contrast with spinal axis shots. (Division of light is bright on one side, dark on other.)

Any specific pose suggestions, or just try and see what works?

has anyone ever done nude shoots with an actual model?
