Either a 40D and 100-400L IS if you want to be a Canonfag, or a D300 and 200-400 VR if you want to be a Nikonfag. Nikon's a little bit faster, and you probably won't miss the wide end, but that's only if you have a fucktonne of money to throw at it. I'm a Canonfag, so I don't know about this option, but the Nikon 80-400 is a lot cheaper, but I don't know about the quality.

Whatever road you choose, you'll probably want a faster lens than the 100/200-400, too, like a 70-200 f/2.8 or something similar.

D90
Sigma 10-20mm for the goofy shots, 70-200 VR for the long / most of the pics, and sigma 24-60 f2.8 for whatever in between

i too am interested in animal photography, but instead of a 70-200 or a name-brand X-400 something-or-other i opted for the cheap and bought a sigma 100-300 f/4 for 600 USD, 440 after cashback. it's insanely sharp, but soft at 300 f/4 (what do you expect). i haven't really got to use it in a demanding setting but this morning i did take it for a quick 5 minute spin before work. locked on the birds surrounding my job very quickly, good detail and accurate focus. i recommend this lens if you're not a brand whore

F/4 in a telephoto isn't -that- slow, you know..

F/4 is not slow in a supertele, and a one stop difference means shit.

If you were serious about this, you'd know already.
Any self respecting wildlife shooter would be using a a 1Dmk2/3 and 70-200 2.8 IS and a 300mm/400mm 2.8, along with a 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.

Your rebel and 75-300 4-5.6 just won't cut it.

Good luck getting all that. Enjoy your fail.
