I don't know where I heard the phrase, but it's what I've always used to describe photography to people:
"Photography isn't just taking pictures; it's the study of light."
Would /p/ say this is an accurate statement? I'm just curious as to what you think.

here at /p/, we only own cameras to make up for the lack of social skills, we use them as objects to hide behind when venturing into the outside world.

it's a shallow generalization by someone who doesn't know a lot about fine art photography. photography is a hell of a lot more than the study of light, and all i have to do is come up with one good example of photography that ISN'T about the study of light to prove it wrong.

robert frank. there. you're wrong.

Could it not be said that to take that picture at the right exposure, the photographer must have studied light and understood the functions of the camera in order to get the correct settings?

Not anymore thanks to digital and green boxes.

then you could just as easily say that photography is the study of how to work a camera, which it is not. you could just as easily make the inane argument that photography is the study of depth of field, or bokeh, or shutter speed.

light is a means to an end, just like shutter speed and aperture and developing the negatives and printing them and all of the thousands of things that contribute to making a photograph. together, these constitute the craft behind the art, the art being nearly impossible to summarize in one tidy little sentence.

Photography is the art of having stuff to say with photographs.

sometimes. what about commercial photography?

Honestly my two cents. A great many people consider themselves photographers. Most of those people are, at best, amateurs. Some are pros. Some are truly great. Consider it in terms of music. There is popular music - most of which is not by truly talented people. (Consider this most 'commercial' photography).

Then you have your truly talented musicians. People that write music and sing with talent far beyond their peers. Sometimes these people become popular.

Most people that consider themselves musicians are at best amateurs at it. They can play cover songs reasonably well. Hell they may even get a few local gigs. But they don't have what it takes to make it big.

I'm an amateur photographer. I dabble quite a bit. but there are others out there (even here on 4chan) that have more raw talent than i do.

You're confusing a photographer with a gaffer.
