Nothing to Shoot Anonymous
Hey, /p/! I want to get involved in photography but I have a problem: I can't seem to find anything good to take photos of. Most of the stuff I shoot is just buildings' corners or empty spaces.

Would you guys have any tips for me on what I could shoot? Some kind of subject or theme?

you could try doing the "your city in 6 pictures" thing 4chan kinda has goin, or used to.

theres a book called learning to see creatively or something, havent read it but it sounds good?

take an art class

they'll teach you to see the basic structural elements in an image

apply that to irl and take a picture of it, you're all set

Try street photography? In my opinion, people are great subjects to shoot.

True that, but taking the pictures without being a dick is an art form in itself...

Also, though not necessarily, it helps to have a telephoto (or close) lens, so you're not up in someone's face (which might mean buying a new lens)..

but longer lenses usually mean boring, flat street shots. =[

if youre not a complete jerk, most people are okay with having their picture taken. just smile a lot and if anything, they're usually be flattered or indifferent.

Or you could go the Bruce Gilden route and just be a dick

Note that the rules are different for you than for most 4channers. People are a lot more comfortable with cute girls taking their pictures than ugly nerds.

(Unless I'm misremembering that you're a girl. Or you're a really hideous one. Both of which are certainly possible. But I think an ugly chick still would have an easier time with in-your-face street photography than most guys)

Op, go buy or borrow some books of photographs. Not like books ON photography--the important thing here is to look at other people photographs, not to learn how to set your aperture and futz with photoshop. Flickr's explore page is good for this too. Look at other people's pictures and you'll start to recognize that a lot of the interesting things they're taking pictures of are really fairly mundane things shot in interesting ways.

Always have your camera on you. Look in your local indie papers for interesting events happening and go take pictures at them. Do a picture-a-day project. Shoot fucking everything. Eventually you'll learn how to spot things that make good pictures.
