recent trip I||ICIT !!mknjFN/v/49
went to the snow the last weekend, ive been before bout 10-15 years ago so it was pretty cool, but it was even better for my g/f whose never been to snow of any sort so it was pretty exciting for her :)
did some shots and a few pano's while we were at the hut and a few on the way back.
took plenty more on the friday, went out by myself for a few walks but they just ended up being generic waterfall/river rapid shots that i just wasnt happy with...

as usual, looking for some general c&c

1st is on the desert rd looking over at the east side of mt ruapehu. tongariro is the cone on the far left, and ngarahoe(sp?) is the sorta flat, mangled mountain next to tongariro...
enjoy :)

found this on the way down.
its just sorta east of taumaranui heading towards national park. was just driving past and thought "hey, that looks cool" nearly kept driving but decided to pull over and walk back to get some shots. it was one of those moments when the lighting and subject were just right :D this is why i love photography ;D

oh and the previous shot was the view up the mountain from our hut. this is back over on the west side of the mountain. whakapapa ski field btw.

and these are the pylons that carry HUGE amounts of power up the country from the south island where its produced at the hydro-electric dam's and used up north in auckland.
it was pretty scary that you can hear them buzzing and crackling away above you and you start to feel slightly dizzy if you stand still for too long :S very freaky lol!

Good shit man, loving those panos. Got some nice rich skies in there too. I went up a month or so ago, wasn't brave enough to take the SLR so just took my Casio PnS. Good for video tho :P

Forgot to add : Don't you fucking hate those big ass powerlines from the desert road? Although you have almost made them work for you there. Also can you post up a big version of ATC pano3.jpg and pano1.jpg for background? :D

yea, i didnt end up taking it up the mountain. arrived late thurs so didnt get any pics then.
went for a ~3hr + a sep 40min walk on the friday down at the taranaki falls on the way up the mountain but weather was SHIT! so skies were all bland grey and lighting was just V dull and ended up not being worth keeping...
was a good test of the new kathmandu jacket though, Fucking rain on and off all day...! was very VERY lucky my equipment didnt get buggered considering how wet my backpack got, got back to the hut and opened it up to find my gear was "moist" to say the least... fuckin scary lol!
definitely looking to get a waterproof outer shell for the backpack in future...

another touristy shot in front of "the grand chateau"

lol yea, they shoulda put them on the other side so you at least get a clear view to your right while your driving along...
if you go back down there, theres a road that runs towards the mountain from the desert rd. its a rough access road to tukino snow field(tukino.co.nz) which runs through the army test fields... so dont wander to far off rd lol! thats how i got the one looking down the pylons and the mountain without the pylons if you were wondering.

Saw that road last time I went up, do you need a 4wd even when there is no snow?

Cheers for the bigger panos. I could so rock a big print of pano3 for my missus, she loves the mountain.

This is on the way to taranaki a couple of months ago.

i dunno TBH. i only drove about ~5-800m up the rd, just enough to get past th powerlines but on my way up the rd was pretty bumpy and i only saw a pair of 4wd "trucks" come down past me, one dude was laughing/smirking at me thinking i was taking my car up the same rd lol!
so where bouts in nz are ya?
me, auck sorta west/central.

Sweet as will have a putt up that road next time Im up there. Going up that way next month to go to Taupo racetrack in the evening, could be a good photo op.

I live down in Palmy, was just up in Aucks last weekend tho, I grew up on the shore family still there. Got some pretty good pics at the Zoo heh.

That view was somewhere between Palmy and New Plymouth, can't remember if it was between wanganui and hawera or NP and Hawera. If you go down the surf highway that goes the long way around the taranaki buldge has some cool photos ops. I lived in NP for a few years after leaving Aucks.

If your ever driving down SH 1 to welly and its a nice day make sure you stop at foxton beach, its very photogenic :P Awesome sandunes and lots of cool shit washed up. Pic related - at Foxton.

lol, i know, fucking hate nz broadband...
used my 5gb cap and so its fucking tedious as hell using "dialup"...
hurry up 22nd of this month!!!

also, just did a weekend rd trip with a couple of mates from auck the weekend before last to wellywood...

took us 12 fuckin hours to get there! didnt have time to do anything. drove, arrived bout 830, drank, went to town, drank, went home, woke up, checked out, 8+ hour drive home again for more sleep.... wowo what a weekend that was lol! :D

hehe we have the Xtra unlimited data plan, its good but everyone is slow down in Palmy, too many people on the exchanges. Sounds like a fucking mean mish, but jeeze 12 hours, did you take a scooter or something!! Either that or the "scenic" route.

This picture is excellent, though I would darken the sky a bit, a 2 layer gradient mask would work wonders here.

All the others are good too, some of the pano's need a bit more of a "layering" (Foreground subjects, or some sort of flow)
>> I||ICIT !!mknjFN/v/49
>>256383
well we did knida stop in at rotorua for the luge :P but even that only took a couple of hours!...

See if you can figure it out from this. (For the photoshop tip)

Create a duplicate layer, Use a layer mask with a gradient Black to white to softly seperate the 2 layers
Edit each one sepperately.
This is a quick hack job, but it shows you the original, vs 10 seconds of editing.

And for the Pano's I don't know if you have seen my advice thread, but I am a firm believer that pano's should be composed with an interesting foreground in mind, not just to fit a lot of landscape in. So like in your first picture, the road is a bit boring for a foreground, and the featureless desert is the majority of the picture, which makes the otherwise tall and interesting mountains look tiny.

The Snowscape, is better but the building on the right should actually be a part of the photo rather than just a half cut off edge.
