1000D Guy
Tying into the 50D, Canon also announced a 18-200 3.5-5.6.
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canon_18-200_3p5-5p6_is/

What do you guys think?
I might get it to complement my 1000D's 18-55.

IMO these lenses are practically useless.

On one hand, how often is it anyone needs >~90mm equivalent shooting a general scene?

On another, complementary hand, how often is it someone needs wide angles to shoot a far-away scene one would use a tele zoom for? I could see a normal to tele, say, a 50-200mm equivalent being useful, but not this.

On yet another, the one legit use for a ~28-300mm equivalent lens would be when one can't change lenses at all, say, a photojournalist in a very windy, sandy desert, who's going to have to shoot a crowd and then a speaker up on some stage or whatever. It's too dusty for him to switch from his 24-70 or whatever to his 70-200 or whatever.

But guess what? AFAIK, none of these is weathersealed. Can't use that.

Just to be a COMPLETE tard, this isnt 28-300mm, more like 29-320.

>>242930
No shit, that's why they make them, they sell. But that doesn't mean they're particularly useful lenses.

>>242932
What are you confused about? My point was one of these would theoretically be useful in a situation where changing lenses is out of the question, but they're not because any such situation would also demand weathersealing.

QFT

and it rotates during focus too, massive fail

Sometimes you can't change lenses because it takes too much time.

Sometimes you can't change lenses because you're somewhere where a large camera bag with both wides and teles would be too bulky.

Do any micromotor lenses not do that? Most annoying fucking thing in the world..
>> Anonymous
>>242942

the ef 50/1.4 is micro usm and does not rotate and allows ftm

you just have to disengage the clutch in the lens, it's harder to make so they don't do it all the time
>> Anonymous
>>242923
I'd say 18-200 is pretty damn useful for people who use their DSLRs as point and shoots. It's hard to justify farrying extra lenses, let alone changing them all the time, when all you want is nice holiday snapshots.

Gigantic BAAWWWWWWing thread. It looks like a good "walk-around" lens. One body, one lens, good for a broad range of subjects.

I'm using the 28-135 zoom lens packaged in the 40D kit. It's fine for what I described above. Sure, it's not an L series, but I'm not complaining for a kit lens.

This could be a useful addition to Canon's lineup.

why would anyone even BUY a fucking crop lens? for one thing they never made any Primes in that format. what a waste
>> Anonymous

>>242950
Well, I suppose you fags don't travel quite often. Walking around on a city carrying the equivalent of those 18-200's with primes & short zooms will crush anyone.

Is much comfortable just taking your camera with a single lenses. Plus, quality is not that bad as some of you say. It has a few handicaps, such as the tele end being quite slow, etc. but overall is the best kind of "walking/travel" lens out there.

i can always bring the 500 reflex if needed
>> Anonymous
>>243341
From what I see, most crop lenses are in a price range where there isn't much that'd provide similar features in full-frame.

Besides, most of the people buying crop lenses aren't likely to upgrade to a full-frame camera all that soon.

>>243350
I may buy one of the Pentax DA* lenses for the weather sealing but I do agree with you for the most part.
