hi /p/.

I lost at a photography contest today. Didn't even make the top 20.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGEEEEEE

I know I'm not that good; I think I've become too attached to "rules" of thumb and such, and gotten snobby about what I shoot and don't. Also, judging from the top 20, well, I need to get out more. On the other hand though...

Winning pic was a flower shot, from above.
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGEEEEEEEEEEEEE
So were about 50% of the top 20 pictures....

Similar experiences?

when taking a picture for a contest you have to look at who/what type of people are judging it and shoot accordingly.

That's a good suggestion, I'll keep it in mind for next try. Unfortunately this time, I didnt hear about it till the last day before the deadline, so it was pretty much submit something or nothing and I took my chances. Prize seemed kinda yummy though. Damn nice D60 I could have sold to buy lenses.

post what you submitted to the comp. We'll tell you if you should have won.

Sure. Don't be too harsh though; I already expressed my point of view / reflection on it. I know I'm no badass.

The categories were Flora and Fauna. I think I got disqualified from "flora" the moment I posted this anyways; it hardly fits the bill. Posting fauna pictures afterwards.

Third entry, and the simplest of the bunch.

One of the big issues (Im sure you can find many of those, no surprise there) is that these two are animals we kinda get to see every day over here but they took a bit of effort with a sony point and shoot.

Yeah, were you surprised that half the top 20 of a "Flora and Fauna" contest were flowers?

More of a mountain/sky shot than a flora shot.

You don't have the entire head in the frame.
>>167056
Technically good, although there is nothing unique about it.

I like the OP pic, however (if you got the top of the window).

>More of a mountain/sky shot than a flora shot.
I know, it's very weakly related to flora; not even the subject.

>You don't have the entire head in the frame.
Do I have to really? It's much harder to get this close and get it sharp, considering how much it was moving, than it is to get its head in the frame.

>Technically good, although there is nothing unique about it.
Yeah, very common subject and framing.

>I like the OP pic, however (if you got the top of the window).
Thanks, but no, I didn't. Because of the camera I was using, I wasn't even able to see the entire frame. I thought I wouldn't even have any part of the interior in the shot. (Was experimenting with a 25-year old toy camera to see if it was in working order)

I know, might as well have sent a picture of my penis, would have gotten the same result: not even related.

Would you link us to the contest if there is one? I'm curious.

Sure

Top 20 photos. Yeah, I kinda got rolled anyways...

I kinda feel happy for 1st place though. That D60 (1st place price) will be a good upgrade to her sony point-and-shoot.

To be frank, I'm just whining. I got greedy. I wanted to win the D60 to sell it away and buy lenses for my XTi. Oh well, tough luck.
