What'll /p/ do?

Tomorrow we have a dinner at my job, and since it's the last working day of a co-worker, I'll bring my camera...

But I seriously don't know which lenses I should take with me. Either the 18-200 or the 50mm.

Personally, I'd pick the 50mm, since it's better for portaits, plus it'll give me a few stops more, which is useful. But the range is (obviously) limited, hence for group portaits I'm pretty much screwed, unless I can physically move myself backwards.

The 18-200 has much better range, but not as much aperture. It has VR though (but with VR people will appear moving, usually).

So, basically:

A) Take 50mm
B) Take 18-200
C) Both! (that means I'll be carrying waaay too many stuff)
>> Anonymous
D) take both and quit being such a pussy. Even if you are too fag to carry two lenses at once, just leave the other one on your desk when not using it.
>> Anonymous
get both. 50mm is nice, but since it has constant focal length, it is very limiting.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
My experience shooting coworkers at company events says you'll really, really want that extra couple stops.

But yeah, stop being a pussy and bring both.

this is indoors?

man you need an external flash more than anything else.

Well, we are going to eat in a restaurant, so yes, indoors. Dunno how'll be the lighting there.

Flash is out of question, I just don't wanna use it - this isn't me taking "pro" shoots for the company or something like that, it's just me taking my camera during our lunch break and taking some photos of mates, for the shake of it.

Hence, I don't wanna carry my whole bag, full of lenses, flash, etc. Just a small one, with my camera and that's it; that's why I would rather pick only one -specially the 50mm, since it's tinny- problem is that I just can't pick one.

Why are you asking us?

Dark. It'll be dark. Unless it's outdoors or right next to a window on a sunny day, at least.

I'm asking because I'm not sure. I think the zoom will be more handy for the situation, no need to move myself around and so. But worse light control.

The other one has better light, but constant focal length.

>>133466
Some restaurants almost have proper lighting... heck, even at job our lighting is rather mediocre - in photographic terms (pic related).

the lighting inside will be too low to get anything good with the 18-200. no doubt about it. unless you bring a flash with you or will do some shooting outdoors while its still light out, theres no reason to bring the 18-200

>> stickb0y7 !9FVrc11kpo
i was in almost the same situation...

i just had a company dinner on thursday night and i was asked to take pictures of those being recognized. i brought both my 50mm 1.8 and my 18-135 and was glad i did. i took portraits with the 50mm and sb600 flash bounced off the ceiling, and group shots with the 18-135 because i couldn't get back far enough with the 50mm. i still had to lighten the group shops afterward because i bounced the flash, i didn't want harsh direct lighting, but i should have just increased the ISO (left it at 200 the whole night)

good luck with no flash
>> Anonymous
unless you have a nice external flash don't bother with the 18-200, it'll be way to slow to capture anything so the range won't help at all.

50mm will be fine for indoors, you'll get lots of nice pictures as opposed to the 18-200 where you might not get any.

OP here... picked the 50 after all.

For 135 film and FX sensors. For DX, it's something between 28-35.

There's a 28mm with 1,4 f?

30mm sigma with f1.4, but its hit or miss on a canon, due to some front focusing issues.

Like the smile, but the focus is a step too far back. In general, you focus on the eyes. Even with sunglasses I think it'd work. as it should still get most of his face in focus. Still looks like a very usable pic.

>>134057

Good. Since both of the girls are looking away and your buddy is looking at the camera, I think it still works. He's smiling, the one on the left is laughing and the one on the right is biting the cord from his hoodie for whatever reason.

>>134059

I wish the person in the foreground didn't have her face covered by her hair. You seem quite visible yourself due to the shiny glasses. Otherwise good.

>>134060

No complaints. Nice smile.

>>134064

She looks a touch too serious in this pic, but I guess it depends what other photos you have of this person in the set. Other than that, maybe a slight WB tweak.

Overall the pics look fantastic!

Thanks for the critiques. I noticed the 50mm doesn't focus as well and as fast as the 18-200 (for example). Sometimes that gives me some interesting effects, even if I wasn't looking for them.

Since this wasn't a serious work, but rather just taking pics of (and for) friends, I wasn't paying full attention to the technical aspect. Basically, just snapshots.

Hah! All that and it turned out you took most of the pictures outside in the sunlight. Guess you could've used the 18-200 after all.

Yes. After dinner we went to a plaza near work to take a coffee. Today light was amazing (classy spanish summer...ish day), hence I didn't had any light problems. But I also had a lot of space to move around, hence it wasn't really a problem not having the zoom.

I did took quite a bunch of indoor shoots though (pic related). But I was slightly drunk at that time, hence I fucked up some shoots.

nice shots, but yeah since it's pretty much sunny days... the 18-200 would have been okay

but the 50mm looks much sharper, and the bokeh is nicer too

If you use the 4chan FF extension, the images load in place, so resized versions are really preferred.
