I'm looking to get a DSLR. Originally I was only intrested in the Canon 400D, but after reading about the Sony Alpha 100, I think that's what i'm going to get.

The thing is, I've read reviews where they were very surprised how it is and with that in mind I would have thought to see more of a user base for it. Is there something the XTI or other camera's out right now have over it that i'm overlooking? I've only read one downside so far and that's the noise over 800 ISO.

So what's up?

I work at store 554, Boca Raton Florida. Been there for about 4 months, first 2 I was in Merch/Inventory. Easily the hardest job there. But I got lucky and got moved to D.I. fulltime.

The frame is metal, just like the 20/30D- the plastic is only on the outside. They're not flimsy...and the best thing is not "the dust thingy". My 10D has never had the sensor cleaned, and I've had it for years and swapped lenses all the time, in all sorts of places outdoors and indoors. Unless I'm shooting at stupidly high f/stop numbers, you CANNOT see the dust as it isn't on the sensor itself.

The only way you can see the dust on the sensor is by taking a shot of a bright background at around f/20 with a telephoto lens, and then cranking up the contrast (ie, all the way)...and then you can see grey spots. I have a fair number, but wouldn't you know that you just can't see 'em in normal photos.

Oh, I forgot to mention- alpha is doomed. Olympus, which has long been a player with optics/SLRs, launched 4/3rds and by all accounts, it's been a flop.

Sony is going to try the alpha thing, maybe come out with a few lenses that are so-so and overpriced, and then alpha will implode. Just like every other proprietary thing Sony has come up with.

Buy a Pentax, Nikon, or Canon. Ie, something for which there are *already* dozens of lenses currently for sale, and hundreds of different ones on the used market. Pentax and Nikon users can enjoy mounting up just about anything made in the last 30+ years to their shiny new dSLR...

I wouldn't buy Sony even for 1/2 price.

yeah i gotta say... i wouldnt get the Alpha if i had the choice of the 400D or the D200...

The Carl Zeiss lenses are brilliant, but even from a friend who's a salesperson for Sony (by that i mean to large volume retaielrs) the Alpha isn't fantastic. I'm sure they'll come up with something great next time around, but for now it's safer to stick with tried and tested brands.

Honestly too... the self cleansing fearture is for those who don't know too much about photography. It's a gadget to attract new buyers...

like Sat/nav in a car... people drove perfectly fine without it before, i mean it helps but not absolutely necessary to your task of photography.

Same applies to the sensor cleaning feature.

In the end it's up to you, if you're happy with the feel, the picture quality and the choice of lenses, grab the Alpha.

Alot of it is personal choice.

Sony bought out Minolta and Konica so the chasey is compatible with any Minolta Lense from 1985 and up. that is a huge feature that alot of people dont know about

Uh...just because it says "Carl Zeiss" doesn't mean it's god's gift to lenses. You can't compare their $1500 lenses to the stuff they design for consumer/"prosumer" cameras.

C-Z designed cameraphones? Shit. C-Z designed digital camera lenses? Half or more of them were no better (or worse) than everyone else's lenses because they were built of the same quality of glass/coatings/etc.

You mean nikon. Theyre OK, but theyre last generation, 6MP, no antishake or antidust.

Seeing that I can get the alpha for $600, I might get that for now to learn. Though, I kinda want to save for the D80, I just love the feel, controls and the kit lens on that thing.

All this hype about which dSLR is better gets you nowhere.
Seriously, you need to feel the camera in your hands, the weight, the size, and how comfortable you are with it.
Maybe before deciding which brand to go for, have a test drive first, and see what exactly you are looking for (comfort, performance, versatility...)

yeah but the gerneral thought is that canon anf nikon are better for the money at whatever price point you are looking at. there is a reason for this as they are simply better cameras.

Gernerally, there is a "because..."

As you said, the general thought, but what do you think is better?
read up on their reviews, and test them out.
I was in the market to look for a dSLR. I tried a Canon 350D, but it was WAY too small for my hands and it was definitely not a good grip (for steady shots). I tried on a Nikon, their body is higher and can fit my whole hand. No matter what camera you buy (you cant compare them all), you'll make most of it and enjoy the photos you've taken.
