1. keh.com, go to "camera store"
2. minolta manual focus, pentax manual focus, nikon manual focus, olympus manual focus, canon manual focus. check "camera outfits" for each.
4. anything with a 50mm 1.8 lens that costs less than, say, 175 bucks. bonus points for extra lenses, but expect to pay more.
5. south park references are stupid.
6. profit!

From what I've heard, the K1000 is overpriced because of this sort of thing. I.e., everyone asking about manual camera bodies gets told K1000 over and over again, along with everyone who used them in school wanting to relive their youth. So you can actually get better Pentax bodies for cheaper than the K1000.

It is and you can
Mystique and nostalgia has driven the prices up. I see MXes and even LXes at pawns and fleas right next to K1000s marked 25-50% more D:

Yes. There's no reason not to buy a top-of-the-line professional manual film body, e.g. Pentax MX, Nikon F2, etc.

The only reason not to buy an old pro body is that it might be heavily used by pros and nearing the end of shutter life.

Part of the benefit of the K1000 is that people know the camera enough that you can generally resell it for as much as, if not more than, you paid for it if you place ads out around college campuses or other locations that offer photo classes.

I'm a bit biased as a K10D owner. I plan to get a screwmount (M42) film body later on, but I've been collecting lenses (mostly M42) lately and don't want to go into debt at this point of my life. (I have a credit card with a $25,000 limit... it's VERY tempting.)

1. Why sell it? Buy a great camera you'll never outgrow and that'll outlast you, and use it until you die. Especially when the great cameras are cheaper than the famous entry-level ones. K1000 was good, but it was the Digital Rebel of its time. There's some model (I forget its name) with the same body but lots of other features.

2. I'm under the impression Spotmatics are cheap. Am I wrong about this? (This is a genuine question, and I'm too lazy right at this minute to do an eBay search.)

That's true, but any camera can have unseen problems. That's the risk of buying used.

significantly cheaper than the k1000 anyway. I got my spotmatic with a 50mm 1.4 lens on ebay for like 70 bucks with shipping. If it was a k1000 it would have probably been 120-130.

The thing to look out for with spotmatics is the light meter battery, though. The ones it was originally designed for had too much mercury in them and were banned. It wasn't until relatively recently that they made an equivalent battery that had 1.3v like the originals instead of 1.5v which forced you to do the exposure compensation in your head. The batteries go for about 7-8 bucks online (or about 30 if you go to a camera store)

I think the point of saying you can get better cameras than the k1000 from pentax themselves for the same price or cheaper should imply that you will outgrow it fairly quickly.
If it doesn't: you should outgrow it fairly quickly. If you buy one, don't feel bad about selling it to some schmoe later for more than you paid. The only reason I would go back to a K1000 would be nostalgia, it's basic and its main selling point WAS that it's dirt cheap. It's not anymore.

The spotmatics worth using, especially the ESes, have actually become fairly expensive. Unless you get a deal at a flea or pawn, you're really better off looking for fujica, mamiya and chinon M42 bodies. That, or a K-mount body and pentax branded adaptor.

All this talk about the K1000 is making me happy, because I didn't pay a damn thing for mine.

If I ever sell it, cha-ching, pure profit.
