Another gear thread I guess Falldog !2qYdimqiHs
I'm planning on putting my tax rebate check toward a new lens. I've already got a nice wide angle lens and want something with a bit of zoom & good macro abilities so that I can do some more wild life, people, and model photography.

Two of the lenses I looked at include the Nikon 55-200 which, while inexpensive, felt pretty cheap. The other was the Nikon 16-85 VR. It felt nice and is faster than the 55-200, but it rather expensive and I'm unsure if I need something with more range.

What do you use/recommend/think I should check out?

Out of them 2 you suggested, the 16-85, by far.
Then again, you pay for what you get.

Nikonfags' motto for their overpriced gear.

They are completely different lenses and do not overlap. Choose the one that suits your usage.

You should look into this one.

I heard it's pretty good.

The 55-200mm does feel cheap, but it delivers great results. Don't be put off.

only the VR version, don't get the normal one

I have used the 55-200. It might not feel so solid but it is a lovely lens in practice.

All the range you need.

Reading reviews on B&H I think my ideal situation would be a Nikon 16-85 and the 70-300. Expensive :(

I'm big on primes myself, but 85mm is not long enough for wildlife photography, which he mentioned he wanted to do. I mean, you can do it, probably, but it's far from ideal.

That's a pretty good combo, $1,000 well spent.

The 18-70 is pretty much the same thing as the 16-85 minus VR and less range. It's also half the price if that's killing you.

And B&H reviews are stupid, those are reviews by customers. When you buy something, you usually believe you're making the right choice. Even if there's the random guy who bitches about something.

Well, of course.
