I've been thinking about getting an old 35mm camera to fuck around with, fun at parties, generally carry around, take to the park, etc. I'm seeing these old Argus A series that go for next to nothing ebay. I'm thinking about picking one up. That or an old Kodak Retinette, there's even a Yashica EZ-Matic that's grabbing my eye.

I've never owned/used one of these old cameras before. What does /p/ think? I want to stick to 35mm, because the film is readily available, and cheap.

Some had a hotshoe, some not. Depends on the one you get.

If it's possible, ask if you can run a roll of film with the camera of your choice. Get some cheap kodak gold or something. That way, you'd learn of the cameras faults before you buy it.

Hahhahahahah I see anonymous posting isn't for you.

OP, there are a ton of cameras that you haven't considered that might be nice, like Feds, Zorkis, and Kievs from the USSR, and slightly newer Japanese fixed-lens rangefinders - two categories of of
"old 35mm camera" which are wildly popular for users today. Maybe you should see what's available in your area and then choose based on that? There's no point in cutting yourself down to 3 choices this early in the game.

I'll look into those. At this point, I don't really know what I'm looking for to be totally honest. I was just kind of surfing around e-bay yesterday and some things caught my eye.

I stopped in at the only local camera store today, and they didn't have anything in the old range/view finder cameras. Should I look around at flea markets or antique shops? What's the likelihood of actually finding something worth anything there?

I'll do a little more research.

yes, flea markets and antique shops are win. They sell these old things far cheaper than e-bay. Only problem is, most of the shop owners don't know anything about old cameras so better do your research first on how to spot a good one
