How wide? If you're looking for something to act as an 28mm lens does on film, you're looking for an 18mm or 20mm.

I've heard great things about the 20/2.8 AF Nikkor, the 20/1.8 Sigma, and the Sigma zoom already mentioned.

I'm looking for something that acts as a 28mm does I had one on my old film camera and I miss the perspective.

An Idea that I had was to get an adapter ring for the old lenses and a hand held light meter so I can use my old lenses from my Zenit 11 As well as buy other m42 lenses cheaply so I can experiment with different lenses and get ideas for more expensive digital lenses as I get the money to buy them myself. Or would that just be foolish to go out of my way like that?

Forget anything with words like AF.

You need AF-S, HSM glass.

Honestly, that sounds like a great idea. You'll have to deal with the crop, but you should be able to pick up an 18mm or 20mm old prime pretty cheaply.

There are two kinds of M42 adapter rings for Nikon: without lens, which won't allow you to focus to infinity, and with lens, which degrade image quality. Plus all the hassle with an external light meter.

For experimenting with various old glass, Nikon D40(x) is *the worst* choice among current DSLRs.

here. Didn't know about crappy adapter choices, in which case that would be a bad idea.

Yea I had read about that particular problem, but didn't know about the Image degradation. How much loss are we talking? A further note to say that I had read and heard nothing bad about the d40x until after I bought the thing :(

Thanks everyone for all your help.

Like all things, it depends. An adapter with quality glass will have no serious degradation. A cheap $5 adapter from eBay with "glass" taken out of a Holga, probably gonna be pretty shitty.

Incidentally, the Nikon kit lens will give you a roughly 28mm field of view at its wide end (more like 27mm, in fact, which is even better). If you don't have one, you might want to consider that. Or, even better, wait a bit for the Nikon 18-55 VR that they just announced.

Should I expect any vignetting if I were to follow through with this ridiculous idea?

quite the opposite with the crop its almost impossible to vignett.

Depending on your camera and the lens you are adapting from, sometimes you can get a slim M42 adaptor that keeps the operation of the lens close to the original if it is an old manual focus lens anyway.

I've got an old manual focus 50mm and 70-200m that I tried with that. Worked at least as well as expected. Just a brass adaptor ring with no elements.

Some of the adaptors are crappy and don't fit well and others fit like a glove. It's hard to tell which is which until you try it.
