What am I doing wrong? What am I doing right? I got my first camera about a month ago and haven't had a photo editing program open for more than a few hours, so tips in any area are welcome.

"If your pictures aren't interesting enough, you're not close enough" There's a lot in the frame (the fence, the guy in the background, the cars, the orange warning barrier) that distract from your main subject. Additionally, you've cut off the bottom of your main subject. If you're going to cut off part of it, it should be because you're focusing the whole frame on one specific part of it--as it is, it just looks like you did it by accident or because you weren't really sure what you were taking a picture of.

You may have to get down in the filthy water. This is unavoidable. Invest in some boots.

This would be infinitely better if the statue were lit in some way, be it by off-camera flash or by light painting with a flashlight or what have you.

Ok, I see what you mean. Not ready to invest in a flash yet (or to carry more equipment than I can fit in my pockets) so maybe I'll avoid trying that kind of shots for now.

The pic with the scooter, well, there really wasn't much room in there. The pic is taken maybe about a yard away, from a bridge that crosses the ditch. But yeah, I still should have gotten the whole bike.

I tried cropping it more but I thought it looked worse without the surroundings. Could you perhaps show how much I should have cropped? Or should I have shot it from a different angle?

Anyway thanks for the input.
