Canon 40D combo options Anonymous
Which combo option is better for the Canon 40D?

EOS 40D SLR Digital Camera with Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM AF Lens

$1,599

EOS 40D SLR Digital Camera with Canon 28-135mm Lens

$1,300

I am leaving on travel soon so I have to order now to get it in time.

Thanks.

Neither. Get it with the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or even the Canon 18-55mm IS to save money. The 17-85 is garbage and the 28-135 is not wide enough as a general purpose lens on the 40D.

What's your budget for lenses after the 40D? Because two or three small primes will take up about the same amount of space (assuming that photograph is of one of those two lenses), and the extra speed will come in handy shooting interiors when you don't want to/ aren't allowed to use flash.

Get the body only, and then get a nice alternative like the tamron 17-50 mentioned. Another great all pupose lense is the sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 great lens with great performance. You sacrifice IS for lens quality.

If you were to go with a bundle package, grab the 28-135 over the 17-85

yeah if got get the 28-135 first, then if/when you get a 17-50 tamron then you'll have something for >50

50 1.8 or gtfo

I am going to travel so I would really like one zoom for now because I don't want to bring a lot of things.

The cheaper model is the better between the 2?

Well, see, the thing is that although the zoom is just one thing, it's a pretty big one thing that will be worthless in dark environments. Sitting out on the hotel bar balcony talking to someone, and want a quick photograph? With these zooms, you're either going to have to go all direct flash, or bring some external strobes, which would totally freak your conversational partner out if you started setting up flashes and sync cords everywhere over some scotch. OTOH, if you bring a 35/2 or a 28/1.8, you've got a perfect lens for that.

Light going down and you're on this beautiful old square? Just a bit too dim perhaps for the ISO and shutter speed you would want? Haul out a 20/2.8, and snap that lovely 16th Century burger's house, with all the great evening shadowplay and colors on it.

Pretty waitress with a good command of English chat up with you about your camera? Take out the small-and-cheap 50/1.8, and shoot a nice head-and-just-below-the-shoulders.

Do you get where I'm going with this? Two or three small primes will about the size of that zoom in your OP pic. Zooms work OK in general conditions, but anytime stuff gets interesting, primes will win out.

I have the 28-135 and am not really satisfied with it. Decent range but the images are just not that good out of it.

And fuck me, it's "burgher" not "burger."

Any 100% crops to show the sharpness?

If you are just getting into DSLR photography then go with the 28-135. Yeah it isn't the sharpest lens in the world, but the IS will come in handy, it has decent range for vacation shooting, and it will give you an idea of what your next lens will be depending on what you feel the 28-135 lacks. After owning it for three weeks i figured i needed a faster, wider lens. I got my 17-50 based on the short comings of the kit lens.

A friend has the 40D and the 28-135. He loves the reach, but wishes it had a wider aperture. f/3.5 to f/5.6 is useless indoors without a flash.

Oh hai.

I bought the 28-135. It's tits.

is it normal it's making a clunking noise when i focus

This means it not just catches focus, it beats it senseless!

That's not the IS? It is audible, but not too loud.

What is a good telephoto lens for the Canon 40D? IS vs no IS prices.
Considering the 1.6x multiplier, I would like to go up to 300, which is effectively 187mm (150mm will do).
Dpreview has started testing some lenses, but they're just too few.
Got my 40d 2 days ago from a duty free shop at an airport.
