What the tripfag is trying to say is that you should take b&w pictures of yourself in the bathroom instead. It's what he does, and all his friends on da love it.

See, this guy is such an awesome photographer that he switches his point/shoot camera to black and white mode and still shoots with the flash on. Man, he does cutting edge DA work.

As you can see, courses aint so popular...

Thing is, if you do have "an eye" for photography, your tutor WILL spot it, and they will help you out...

Just dont fall into the trap of doing substanderd shit to be arty... work at what sells....

And dont go into this thinking its a good idea for a job, its VERY hard to make a living of photography.

You'd be better off doing another study that is close in subject, and do photography on the side. I personally study audiovisual arts at an art academy, which is mostly filming. However, since I'm there, I can ask photography teachers for advice.

tl;dr: Photography can be learned by yourself easily, and is a bitch to get work in. Do something else to be safe.

Find a school that has business courses. Most art schools only teach you the art of photography and not the business side at all.

I went to Ohio University. VisCom is a hell of a good program and offers both commercial photography and photojournalism majors as well as other visual-communication majors. Definitely worth checking out.

OP here...
fair enough. I've taken a few years of Uni courses already but to be honest I'd rather learn something I'm more interested in. I'm aware of how competitive this field is so I dont plan on making it my career unless I feel like I can support myself off of it. An artsy school would be fine. Like I said personal gain. If my work isnt good enough and the hole thing fails then I'll bail on taking photos professionally. I just want some help training my eye in more hands on teaching enviroment Plus a better overview of all the technical aspects.

pre-emptive tl;dr: if you want to be a commercial, portrait or wedding photographer, just buy some strobes, a few how-to books and you're good. no school necessary.

if you want to pursue journalism or fine art, you NEED a degree.

/p/ is full of hobbyists armed with digital rebels and a passing interest in photography. very few of them have actually committed to taking more than an introductory course. take any advice they give you about going to school with a big grain of salt. yeah, photography's competitive, but thousands of people graduate and become successful every year. it's only going to be more competitive if you don't have a degree.

having said all that, i would say go for it. why the fuck not? just avoid private schools like brooks, accd, etc. they're insanely expensive and a degree from one of them doesn't mean any more than one from a state school with a prestigious photo program.

where do you live?

Again, having completed almost any Bachelors/Masters degree, you are open for a lot of different jobs, mostly not in the same field as what you were studying.

I say, take courses you are interested in, that way it's easier to force yourself to actually do some studying.

I'd take a look at University of North Texas. The art program is great, and the studio/art photography program is excellent.

Another poster here mentioned biz classes, and yeah, you should take them. This school has a good biz program.

After that, you can get your Masters in it at the neighbor college - Texas Women's.

OP Here...

I'm in Toronto. I've looked into a few schools. Parsons, Ryerson Uni, ACCD in LA, and a bunch others. I figure If I keep this up and do moderatley well I'll most likely go into journalism. Big fan of Magnum Photography so I'd love to try to emulate that. P.S...I dont mind moving to be honest. I've lived here my entire life a change of scenery would be nice. Uni of North Texas eh...Sounds interesting... I'll take a look into it... I've got till january so tons of time. cheers,
