I'm not sure about the use of the ultra wide in the first two...

I can see why, but i think you just missed it in terms of composition.

The rest of the photos are nice and i see what you've done, but personally i would have given the photos more room. I felt it's a bit too tight on the people.

The girls especially, it's their prom (we call them formals here) so you want to capture their hair, the accessories and the dresses that they've spent soo much fuckin time preparing with :D

The guys... well at my school a few of the boys had bespoke suits made, but it didn't change the fact that they were still cunts.

This is the only one that isn't awesome. Just a group shot.

Tight portraits are usually good, these are no exception, and while UWA and I usually don't take to each other, it's used really, really well here and the distortion doesn't even bother me.

The undistorted group shot is much better though. Even though it's kinda plain, there's something I like about it as a photograph I can't pin down.

Haha, prom isn't really my thing, I just went to spend time with some of my friends who were going, and I spent part of the time just walking around shooting pictures, whether I knew the people or not.

Somebody... maybe the school, maybe some rich parents., who knows, I never saw the shots.. had a photographer hired who did stupid stuff like shooting at least 75% hail mary shots with a direct flash.
>> Anonymous
>>195197
I really dig it, but the distortion to their fingers is just freaky!

>>195198
Whoa dude. Definitely didn't work. With a lens like this, a cool angle would've been a shot with them as they are (except maybe a little more tightly huddled around you) and then hold the camera over your head and tilt down. All the emphasis is on their faces, but you can still get a clear image of their bodies. It would've made a great wide-angle shot.

>>195199
With that lighting? Diffused fill flash. Great shot, though. Maybe a tighter crop on the left. Feels too unbalanced to me.

>>195200
Hooray, fill flash. Nice semi-candid shot.

>>195201
I know what you're trying to do here and you almost pulled it off. It's just a little too tight to the left...

>>195202
Like all the others, sharp as hell man. These are excellent, high-quality images and you should be proud. However, the composition's unbalanced. There's like nothing on the right of this image...

>>195207
Excellent composition/balance, solid lighting, great fucking shot man. Now if you were going to actually do something with this photo (like sell it to her parents as a 8x12 hint hint), do some light shooping (blur or heal tool to some of the details of her face like the pores, get rid of those lil blemishes, and maybe play a little with some of the color in her eyes, face, lips, etc.).

Solid. fucking. work.
>> Anonymous
>>195254
>(blur or heal tool to some of the details of her face like the pores, get rid of those lil blemishes, and maybe play a little with some of the color in her eyes, face, lips, etc.)

What would all this artifice do for the shot?
>> Anonymous
>>195255
Just standard things that make her look prettier. That's if you wanted to sell it to her folks for some actual scratch (or give it to them, if you know them well enough). I don't know about you, but I'm always trying to see how I can cover gear costs like this. Even if the shot only scores 1 out of 5 "shitsux" on /p/, her folks'll probably love it (and they should).
>> Anonymous
>>195256
They'd really love it just as much without that, though. I mean, honestly, unless you showed it to them retouched and unretouched they probably wouldn't notice the difference. Why put in the work?

And I've got philosophical issues with this sort of thing. People are beautiful even with pimples and cellulite; in fact, little details like that add to people's appearance usually, IMO. Constant obsession with unrealism like that is unhealthy and we have enough of it in our society. No need to add to it.
>> Anonymous
>>195257
Surprisingly enough, life isn't anything like the movie Juno. Quit being so goddamn naive or high and mighty. It's not constant obsession, it's like adding fucking make-up with Photoshop.
>> Anonymous
>>195261
I've never seen Juno. It took hearing two lines of dialogue for me to decide not to.

You don't think there's a constant obsession with people trying to hold their looks (and other things) to an artificial standard in contemporary industrialized societies?

And how am I being naive?
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
>>195254
>With that lighting? Diffused fill flash

I'm not really sure how to do that, I don't own a flash yet (just borrowing the 580 from a friend). I've got to do alot more experimenting.

>Solid. fucking. work.
Thanks!
>> Anonymous
>>195262
That "you're perfect just the way you are" bullshit is the same kind of tripe Disney would stuff down your throat. I mean, come on, looks influence a lot even to you.

There's an urge- obsessive or otherwise- to excel at everything, not just looks. You're just locked onto this skin-deep stuff right now. Trust me, I know what you're saying and I know where you're coming from, but it comes off as pretentious and naive, esp. when just talking about clearing up some blemishes.
>> Anonymous
>>195265
I'm not saying at all "looks don't matter." Aesthetics and looks do matter, very much, which is why it's problematic to set up false constructions of what they should be.

No, it's not a big deal in the scheme of things to airbrush a photo you're giving to some parents, but there's a negative symbolic value to it. You're affirming and consenting to the idea that that's what people should look like and the airbrushing of 90% of images broadcasted to millions that does matter in the scheme of things.

>>195213
i wouldve move out a bit further if possible and used a slightly longer focal length, just too much dead space around the group.
oh and one last thing, you shouldve got the group together more, again with that guy on the left...

also, do you own a tripod? they are your friend for group shots, that way you can be in the shot too lol! >_<

The general rule of thumb is your age divided by two, plus seven, is fine. Op misses this by a bit, (17.5) but it's within reasonable standards. I'm dating a girl 7 years younger, (I'm 28)
