Actually, having used both cameras, I can tell you that pentax isn't so much 'harder' than nikon to use, as it is different. Its like saying you've never driven before, and you have the choice between right hand drive and left hand drive. One is not inherently more difficult to use than the other, they're just different ways of doing the same thing.
Also, if the price of the K10d is a little steep for you i'd say step it down to the K100d. The only real difference is less megapixels (6 vs 10), and no weatherseals, and its a bit smaller. Seeing as how you're considering the D40 though, I don't think 6MP would be too much of a hangup. Plus, the k100D is cheaper in a kit than the D40, from what I've seen, usually by about 50 or so dollars (yeah, only 50, but that's 50 dollars more that could be used to buy a bitchin SMC-Pentax M 28mm f3.5 prime from the 70s. Have one, it's sex, and I don't think one would run you much more than 50 bucks.)
Cliff notes: pentax is a better bargain, if not necessarily the better camera.
