seven years of playing the violin.
plus, people who say they want to learn how to play violin never really do. they want something that looks pretty to stick in that one empty corner of their living room.
then guests will walk in and say, "oh, do you play?" "a little, but not as much as i'd like to." "can we hear something?" "nooo, i haven't practiced in a while, and i need to get the neck adjusted."
which is really just a bullshit excuse for, "i spent 600 bucks on a violin, then practiced maybe six or seven times, gave up, and now it sits in my corner."
if you ask them their favorite composer, they'll say something well-known but respected, like mozart, or bach, or maybe debussy if they're a big enough dilettante.
