need help deciding Anonymous
so ive been wanting a digital camera for a while now, but never really had a need/money. I really like SLR cameras, but we live in a digital age, so i wanting a good DLSR, or something like it. I have viewfinders, so i need that SLR feel to it, but i dont have the big bux to shell out for a nice DLSR, and i dont really need it since id be doing mainly amateur works.
I looked at the Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera, and frankly, its my fav for the price range(up to 400$)
any ideas, comments about the camera, or other cameras i should look at?
thanks a lot (pic related)

Oh well, if you're going to spend that much money. You might as well spend a little bit more for a Canon Rebel XT or XTi because the low light capabilities will destroy that of any "superzoom".

Superzooms are only good for anyone who can't afford a DSLR.

Oh and get the nifty fifty (EF 50mm f/1.8) it's only $80 and it's the best lens ever for the price.

I love Canon.

The viewfinder is a pixely LCD screen.
S5IS is far from a dSLR

If you get an entry level dSLR and buy some good lenses, then you'll pretty much be set. Later on, you can probably sell your body and get a new one once you have enough money saved up. Superzooms aren't too much better than regular p&s cameras quality-wise. They're larger and feel more durable and of course have more zoom capabilities, but aside from that, you're still limited by the lens they put on it.

so you guys are failing to see my question. I do want a DSLR, but its waaay out of my budgets. i cant spend 450 on a rebel.
and i dont care if the viewfinder is pixel LCD screen, its a lot better than looking at a giant LCD screen and looking like a retard or looking at a hole on the top of the camera that has little to do with the actual picture.

but if you guys can help me and show me good places to get these DSLRs cheap, or cheap yet good lenses, that'd be great

Adorama has an original Rebel with 18-55 kit for $400. I'm sure eBay or Craigslist can probably get you a Rebel XT for that much. I've heard about Nikon D50s going for as low as $300 new when companies have been trying to clear out old stock.

Digital SLRs aren't as pricey as they used to be.

Yeah.. and where did you hear this?

On /p/? It's some random faggot spreading lies about Sears selling it for $300. They don't even sell SLRs. And they haven't been made for years.

It was from a specific /p/ faggot who I trust, though. And I know Sears has sold SLRs in the past, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that a few Sears stores carry SLRs in their electronics departments nowadays.

Pentax K100D Super

Get it used.
They're reliable, cheap, and have more features than most cameras in their price range.

Oh, and the PowerShot line IS good for a point-and-shoot camera. Don't let people tell you otherwise. In terms of user control and quality of photos they're probably some of the best non-SLR digital cameras you can get.

Still, a used Pentax DSLR should be cheap and will give you lots of options for cheap lenses.

The higher-end PowerShot A-series cameras will give you better image quality (they have 1/1.8" sensors vs. the S5IS's 1/2.5" sensor), often for cheaper, and in a pocketable package. The controls for the S5 are pretty much the same as for any of the A-series PowerShots, it's just got a bigger lens and grip.

The S5IS is a perfectly decent camera, but there are better choices out there for people serious about image quality rather than lolzoom.
