500 words? That's nothing.

They want to see if you are a retard or not. If you can't write a small essay on it then you are not worth their time.

Good luck and get practising then. You've got plenty time to hone yourself.

You're kidding mate.

I just finished a 20,000 word honouors thesis and a 15,000 word PhD proposal.

1000 words is roughly 4 good paragraphs with a concise intro and a succinct conclusion.

1000 isn't actually alot of words to convey understanding and empathy on someone else's work. You're going to have to think carefully about what you have.

Post that shit here before you submit or give it to someone you trust so they can read over it gfor grammar and other sutff.

write about this, its an image by dorothea lange. it's popular, and considering its context and meaning and story that is well documented, you could go on forever

What were your papers on?

And yeah, OP, if you think 1,000 words is long for any sort of writing, you don't belong in university. Magazine articles are longer than that.

"there are many such images of the ghetto dating from this era, just as well composed as this. What makes this image unique is it's refusal to fetishize it's subject matter. Rather than titilating the photographers well-to-do patrons with an insight into a social demographic that was otherwise too dangerous and sordid to engage with; the photographer presents his audience with their own psychological reaction to the poor of their cities: they're hazards to be quickly walked passed, with whom to avoid eye contact at all costs. Faceless, inhuman and threatening. fapfapfap..."

1)Give a contextual background to the photograph. Talk about the photographer, the social epoch (industrialisation), & the photographic tradition it was engaging with (social documentary).
2) explain how it avoids the risk of fetishising the poor by smudging out their faces.
3) ####
4) Profit!

Popular =! artsy

Lange's FSA work was never meant to be 'artsy'.

And "artsy" does not automatically equal "art" and "not artsy" does not automatically equal "not art."
