Gearfag thread, sorry /p/

I'd like an everday lens that I can walk around with, mostly portraits, street shots, not really much landscape. I'm a broke student, so my budget is pretty tight. Am I on the right track with one of these lens'? If they all suck, or you know of something better, can you recommend it to me please. I'd really appreciate your input.

Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG
Canon EF-S 17-85mm

everyone should own a nifty 50 considering the cost and quality you get.

ah, ive owned both the canon 17-85 and the sigma 24-70.
initially sold the 17-85 as i felt it was pretty much a kit lens with an extra 35 added on and an IS unit. bad distortion, its sooo slooooowwww and the image quality wasnt even any better than the kit lens...
ah, the sigma 24-70. well, its built like a tank. the one i had was pre HSM so AF was wacky, and slow with its crappy motor and weird push/pull then switch for af/mf... dunno if thats changed? though it prob has with HSM. image quality wise, well when i sold it i wasnt happy with its IQ, but now looking back at pictures from it i should have been reasonably happy with it.
its big and heavy, especially on a crop body. and also 24 isnt wide at all on said crop bodies... but again, 70 is nice. oh and i love/d having a fixed aperture and a reasonably fast zoom.
also, the zoom ring goes the other way and like the canon 24-70 it extends at the wide end and contracts for the long end which takes awhile to get used too. especially with people(especially with girls) they all think your zooming in on their "bits" when you try get a full body shot lol!

so now i shoot with 3 primes and 1 zoom and im happy with that, each to his own though....

Buy an older 28mm lens on the cheap. That or save for one of the sigma normals. Buying the 50mm because of the cost and quality is like buying jousting sticks because they are a good deal.

Lemme guess, you're that faggot who started the "Why the hell should anyone buy the 50mm" thread the other day? The one who couldn't figure out any possible use for a fast short tele?

I'd buy anything if it's a good deal. That said, I have high requirements for something to be a good deal other than price such as usefulness or versatility. The 50mm f/1.8 is definitely a good deal to me.

Not to say you're not entitled to your opinions but no need to get hostile cause someone doesn't join the /p/ circlejerk over the 50 1.8.

He wanted an everyday lens he can walk around with. if your main goal is getting a deal go for the fifty then. however if your goal is taking photos why let a deal get in the way of photography. why work around a short tele when you can have a, yes more expensive, but lmore versitile normal.

I suggest at least that if OP gets the fifty that he goes to a local thrift store pick up something in the 24-38 range and see how good it is.

Fair enough. And I agree that it's not a good lens to use as a normal, my point is that
>Buying the 50mm because of the cost and quality is like buying jousting sticks because they are a good deal.
is a dumb statement. I used the 50/1.8 as my primary lens for a good long while with the cheap-ass 18-55 kit kept in reserve for when I needed wider.
