Canon full frame and EF-S lenses Anonymous
I'm reading about the Nikon D3 and as I understand it, since it's a full frame sensor, 35mm lenses will now look as they were when using 35mm film.

Now, you can still put Nikon's DX lenses designed for crop sensors on the D3 but the image will be cropped to 5 MP.

Will Canon do something like this too or is there something different with the EF mount?

i don't believe you're going to buy a D3 anyway, but why the hell would you buy a d3 because it can mount digital lenses?

Because I can use the 18-200 VR, duh.

Great idea! The suckiness will be much less noticeable at 5 megapixel resolution!

Ah, that then. Not having one of those cameras, I'd never looked into it.

One theoretical way to do it would be to have a mirror that slides out of the way instead of flipping up. But that's probably more trouble than it's worth. Not a lot of people are clambering to use EF-S lenses on full frame cameras. They basically just exist so that APS-C people can have wide angles. Full frame cameras have wide angles the normal way. Canon has always made it pretty clear that EF-S != Pro (to the point that there are EF-S lenses that are as high quality as L lenses in every way but don't get to have the L designation because they're EF-S).

With Nikon, it was a little bit different since for a long time it didn't look like they were ever going to come out with a full frame body, so more people invested more heavily in DX lenses for their at-the-time pro D1 and D2-series bodies.

I think ac has pointed out the differences in the concept and complications involved quite well. Don't expect EF-S to be officially compatible any time soon.

If you want to use them then you'd have to modify them yourself. The only EF-S I know that works quite well at this is the 60mm macro which (apparently, I've not tried it myself) works better on FF once adapted than the 50mm macro. YMMV of course.

If there are any brave Canon users tempted to try it then remember to upload any pictures of the process that you can get. I am nosey. :P
