Oh wow Im smart....
The real reason for my post was to ask about EDUCATION AND PHOTOGRAPHY
hrm...yea so do I go to school for, say, a degree in arts THEN go into photography?
or straight into photography?
or dont go to school at all for photography?
or...
????
profit?

do art, doing photography is shit if you already know what m is and how to use it, the only useful things it will teach you is how to develop lots of different films.

learning about art will teach you art history, composition, colour theory and many other useful things.

Unless you are only taking photojournalisim (looks like your not eh?) knowing about proper art will improve your photographs.

Finally someone actually steps up to the plate and fills me in. My guidance counselor is a tool, my parents don't get it and none of my friends are into english or arts or any of that. there all like robots...

Take lots of pictures and divorce yourself of emotional attachment to them. Be harsh with your criticism on the results.

I guess this would be the appropriate thread to post this question. I'm studying wildlife in school and am a very, very interested amateur photographer. There is a photojournalism class I'd like to take, but there are three pre-req classes - BW basics, Color Basics (no developing), and some other random slightly art based class. Would it be worth it to take the 3 semesters/10hrs of classes for the one, or should i just try to weasel into the P.J. class with a mediocre to decent portfolio (that i havent got yet?)

Is right, even on the art academy I'm on, the photograph study isn't really all that interesting.
I suggest going to an art school that does have a photography study and a wet room, but do something else and learn photography in your spare time. There are teachers that can help you and you can use the wet room for free etcetera.

For someone who's complaining that your friends aren't into English, you apparently can't be arsed into using the language correctly. ("THEY'RE all like robots.")

Seriously, though, try to go for a "real" degree (like business management or polysci or philosophy) and take photography as a minor or as a string of elective courses. You could also try to see if your college/university has a photography club. You could probably get some realistic C&C there.

Just because you graduate and you have a piece of paper doesn't mean that you'll get a spot in a gallery or a contract. You just need a decent camera (which you apparently have) and a good printer (which I'm sure you could have access to) to put together a portfolio.

Did you just describe Philosophy as a "real degree"?

hah i think he did, lol silly art students.

Only Eng and Sci (not compsci) are acceptable.

Bizarrely enough I know someone who got a really good job with an art history degree. Funny old world.

yeah well j.

one of my cousins did history (oxford oh lol) and is now training with one of the massive law firms in london. tbh the real art degrees (the old ones) are pretty decent.

i like the way this man thinks.

>>109593
i think philosophy is a very useful degree. it basically shows that you can THINK. by inferrence a degree in philosophy means you can understand and adapt to solve any sort of problem. iv actually seen some ads for postitions in companies that require some sort of philosophy degree.

what about medicine?
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s

Im an engineer, engineers hate medics and they generally hate us too.

its a specialisation more than a degree because after the 7 years of training, you're not going to turn round and go I WANA BE A **** totally unrelated.

No offense but i'm not too concerned with the proper spelling of words on an image board. I'm not here to be criticized about punctuation. I just asked a question involving photography and school.

A lot of the old (aka real) unis that did engineering did medicine as well, so they had engineers and meidics and no one else.

how else are we going to have a rivalry? besides medics are shit, engineers are more intelligent our degree to proffesional accreditation takes 6 years and we dont get payed as much even though we could kill way more people IN ONE GO!

also all medics are drunkards.

close. I've found that medics are either insane crazed alcoholics or they have never touched alcohol in their life.

medics are whiny tools. The people who actually should be doctors don't get to be because they can't compete with the asswipes who spend every waking moment stressing their way to a 4.0.

You've got Oxbridge and fail. I considered this for some time, but I finally decided that just two amazing universities doesn't outweigh the rest.

Oh, and on the whole "real degrees" debate: I'd consider pretty much anything except a business/management degree a "real degree." You want to make some money? Do Economics and learn the real fundamentals, or just have some common sense. You want to understand how to get people to do stuff? Do Psychology, or just don't be a pushover or a dick. You go to university to develop your mind; if you don't give a damn about that and just want to make some decent money, be a plumber or something like that and save yourself four+ years of lost earnings and coursework.

My understanding as far as getting jobs goes is pretty much that most companies just want you to have *a degree* to show you're not stupid. Anyone who's not stupid can be trained to do what they need.

>>109892
Not really. But you'll find out eventually, so there's no need for discussion.
