Also, remember, Kubrick was shooting cinema in the seventies. Fixed shutter speed, slow film. I've heard variously that it was ISO 50 pushed to 200, ISO 100 pushed to 200, or ISO 100 pushed to 400. High ISOs on modern DSLRs, modern film emulsions, and physically larger formats (for 135 and up film) make an f/.7 lens not necessary.
