Hiya folks.

I'm an amateur hobbyist looking to buy my first digital SLR.

The budget is about £350, or $685 for those of you who do things that way.

At the moment my front-runner is the Nikon D40X, about which I've heard only good things.

Any thoughts? Advice? All help much appreciated.

Are you OK with the idea of buying used?
You could probably get a Pentax K10D used for the same price as a K100D Super new, and the K10D is an enormous improvement over the K100D Super.

I forgot to add: one detail you should be aware of is that the K100D Super uses a set of 4 AA batteries, instead of a proprietary rechargable battery. This means two things:

1) If you don't make it a habit to drain your AA batteries before recharging them, they'll quickly lose their reusable life, so it's a good idea to have two sets.

2) Unlike with proprietary batteries, if you run out of juice, you can always buy a 4pack of alkaline AAs at any store and use it like always.

I'm really not..

I hear this a lot, but it's just antithetical to my nature.
