Good evening, /p/. As with everything else photography-related I am basically figuring out how to use (in my case Paint.net) as I go along.

Recently I scanned a batch of underexposed prints and tried to salvage them to some extent, thus: New layer -> additive, and set opacity so that the picture was slightly brighter than I wanted it. Next, auto-level that layer to darken it a shade. Finally, auto-level the first layer to normalize the colors (esp. whites) and add contrast. Results were approximately as shown.

Is this the right approach? Is there an easier way to get the same result, or a less-easy way to get a better result? How hard do I fail at 'shopping?
