Christmas at Ground Zero Half-Eye !Ir.x8Zkt3c
Hello, unfriendly /p/eople,

i has a 40D for Christmas, now i need some GIMP tutorials, since i am fairly new to teh editing.

In exchange, cute asian girls shall be posted.

On a related note, everything looks crappy in fluorescent lights, any ideas on how to fix that in post processing?

1. Shoot RAW
2. Tweak white balance in ufraw or whatever you use until it looks right
3. ???
4. PROFIT

Not OP, but is there another way to do that without shooting in RAW? Like if I was using a piece of crap P&S?

1. The Resize command:
Go to the Image menu, select "Scale image...". You want to scale the image so that it's around 1000 pixels on its longer edge (I usually go for 1024, personally). By default, the width and height are locked to maintain the aspect ratio, so your other dimension will scale along with it. Then hit the 'Scale' button, and you have a picture that won't annoy everyone on 4chan with its size!
(Since the view is scaled by default, you'll probably want to hit '1' after scaling the image so it'll go to full pixels rather than being a little postage stamp in the middle of the window)

2. Rotate
This one's even easier. You will probably want to do this after scaling, since it's a bit faster on a smaller image. Go to the "Image" menu again, scroll down to the "Transform" submenu, and select the option to rotate in whatever direction will make your picture right-side up. Newer versions of GIMP will even do this for you automatically when you load them, assuming you have the orientation sensor in your 40D turned on. After this, you'll have an image that won't annoy all of 4chan by being sideways.

ac, those two are batched in irfanview and acdsee, respectively =)

what i am now trying to do is to cut a hole in a layer (done that with alpha and eraser) and place another layer behind that, but i cant get the edges to "melt" into each other...any tips? (more cute asians as reward!)

Then you have to play with color balance in your photo editor. It's not as easy, but still may get you somewhere.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>104867
Yep. In the latest version of Gimp, there's an "Auto white balance" menu item (Colors -> Auto -> White Balance, as I recall, but I'm too lazy to open it up again and check). If that doesn't work, you can do it manually using curves and something white in your image:
1. Open up Curves
2. Click on something white
3. Change to one of the single-color-channel curves. You'll see a black line with a Y coordinate. That tells you the intensity of this channel at this point. What you want to do is make it so that all three channels have the same intensity at this point in the histogram while maintaining the straight line. So if red says 87 on the black line representing the point, you want to move the green up to 87 at that point and the blue up to 87 at that point, then straighten out the green and blue lines so they're properly balanced.

It's easier to do than it sounds.

Colors -> Levels. Play around with it. It makes things awesome.

Filters -> Enhance -> Unsharp Mask. Play around with it too. It also makes things awesome.

the human eye, as dumb as it sounds, is far more capable than any camera / lens combination. I, on the other hand, suck at GIMP. Problems: a)get the lens (its actually on a layer behind the eye) to blend with the eye, leaving no distinguishable border (tried airbrush, see picture) and b) eyelashes and eyelid over the camera. sux.
>> Anonymous
>>105254

human eyes have amazing high iso performance and pretty incredible dynamic range, but their fucking lenses came out of a holga or something. seriously, there's no definition anywhere besides the very center. i'm sending this shit back to adorama and getting a 2.8 zoom.

Is that correct, ive been wondering what the equiv. apature of our eyes was, does the DoF falloff work in a similar ways.

But our eyes have a much higher ISO performance and with lots less grain (but again only in B&W)
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>105309
>Is that correct, ive been wondering what the equiv. apature of our eyes was, does the DoF falloff work in a similar ways.
Yep. But we don't normally notice because our eyes have a pretty good autofocus system, so they automatically focus on whatever we point 'em at.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>105312
I've been pretty bored recently (i should be revising for exams doing c/w etc) so i've been sitting around mucking about with my eyes, looking at the dof falloff etc because my eyes are awesome and do w/e i want (like not focus on things not look together etc) but the falloff looks more like f8 than f3.5, is it because we have smaller "sensors"?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>105313
Combination of smaller imaging surface plus your brain fudging things for you, probably. Also, we run around ISO400-800, so you might not be wide open.

FUN FACT: The old saying that someone "lights up a room" when they come in comes from the fact that our pupils automatically widen to let in more light when we see something we like. So if you're in love with someone and she walks into the room, you'll suddenly get a bit more light hitting your eye. This is also why mood lighting is dim--we're subconsciously conditioned to see wide pupils as fondness, so in dim lighting it looks like people like you more.

ac, don't lie to me. i'll know if you are. you heard that last fact on the john tesh show last week, didn't you? it's alright if you did, because that's where i heard it.

I was actually doing that the other night. I used out of focus candleflame bokeh to test. It looked about like f/8, too. SCIENCE! :D

I've actually known that for years. In theory, I have a witness for my defense in my girlfriend, who I told it to over a year ago, but you have no way of knowing that (a) someone posting as my girlfriend is really my girlfriend and (b) that I didn't just tell her to say that to save myself some embarrassment. Also, she's probably forgotten by now since she doesn't really care. So you'll just have to take my word for it.

You got a new camera and now you need help on the editing?

How about learning to use the camera so you don't have to edit that much?
