meh, your exposure was too slow.

the best way to capture fireworks usually is to take two shots with one metered for the fireworks themselves so that theyre properly expose and the background/skyline/whatever is behind or in front of them is underexposed and another where the fireworks are overexposed and the background/skyline/whatever is properly exposed. Then gradient the sky from the properly exposed fireworks to the properly exposed background.

Sort of, but not really. Assuming it's dark out and you've got a nice, black sky then it's basically copying and pasting the explosions into a properly exposed picture of the skyline.
