Someone on RFF theorized that they decided to pander to "speedfags and widefags and widespeedfags" because it's the only way they can keep afloat. They can't compete on price (thanks Cosina) or price/quality (thanks Cosina/Zeiss/their own used stuff), so they go for optical innovation - nobody else is ever going to release a 21/1.4 and they know it. And Leica has tended to do well when they're setting new trends (screw mount, M3) , and not so well when they're trying to play catch-up (M5, M8), and I think the current management realizes this.
Someone also posted a picture of the 21/1.4 from the same leak on RFF. It's a little thinner and a little longer than the 50/1 Noctilux. Seems pretty reasonable.
