Too yellow in a couple of them.

>>152996
The dark side of her face isn't focused, and I find it's drawing my attention from her focused part, maybe try to get more of a silhouette going from it.

Overall cool though.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
Color balance on these is just... weird. I really like the first portrait, it's fun, nice background, the weird colors actually work with the pose. The rest fall kinda flat. You didn't try any different setups? These are all torso or headshots, with basically the same composition every time.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
the lighting seems all wrong for the subject, it's too harsh
and the skin tones are just way too yellow'y
pretty lackluster results ..
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
>>153001
Agreed on too yellow, I will re-edit. I tried to make them warm, but it's overdone.

>>153007
Lackluster how? What would you consider more vivid? It's a portrait shoot, there isn't much room to maneuver, imo.

Wasn't my shoot, so I just had to butt in for a few shots, some over-the-shoulder. Just one light through a scrim.

it's probably not all your fault which is why these are hard to critique.
thing is, it's the person you're shooting.
she's not a model, she doesn't look interesting, she wears boring clothes... i feel like i'm just looking at random ass snapshots of very normal person.
there's no concept here at all. check out other studio shoots out there and learn how they get the results they do.
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
>>153019
I see what you mean. I'm guessing you would consider something like a fashion shoot, something out of Vogue or something interesting (I would agree).

Good.

>>152994
Hot beyond words but doesn't quite come together as a photograph.

>>152996
I like the effect>>153001is complaining about, but again, the photograph doesn't quite come together. Maybe a little looser framing.

>>153006
>with basically the same composition every time.

To expand on this: learning to edit is one of the most important skills a photographer can have, and most need to edit tighter. An excess of meh photos presented in a set with some good ones brings them all down.

I know you know the whole thing about Ansel Adams considering twelve good shots in a year to be good, because you've quoted it. Pare this down to the OP alone and it's great. Possibly with slightly different, better versions of>>152994and>>152996. Probably, again, with looser framing. Just a step or two backwards from where you were standing.

Do not listen to this post. This post is not relevant to your interests.

Model is very cute, lighting and white balance is off. The head shot would be nice if the color was apporpriate.

>i feel like i'm just looking at random ass snapshots of very normal person.

Normal people not acting out some shallow concept can be really interesting, too, you know. The first and the last one make this random person seem to be an interesting human being, someone I'd want to have a conversation with.
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
>>153024
Hot as in hotspotted or hot as in reference to aesthetics? I agree on a looser frame, I was shooting with my 50mm and don't like using my kit 18-55.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
>>153026
you kinda come off as a horny chubby white male
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
Do want hot girl. Do want her to look less jaundiced, though. You keep making your pictures look this way. Like every single one. Might want to calibrate your monitor...

Your model seemed to be having a lot of fun, and that comes through really well in these shots. Unless your model wasn't have fun, in which case your model is a good actress.

White male, not horny or chubby. And instead of personal attacks, critique my position.

Here's an example of a random person made interesting by Cartier-Bresson.

Photography, more than art in general, is humanistic: art proclaims that, yes, human creation has value. Taking a photograph of a real person being that person says that this human has value in themselves, that they're interesting. The job of the photographer is to explain why, in their lighting and composition.

>>153029
Aesthetics. It's a very good, sensual pose.
>> Anonymous
>>153037
To elaborate on my response to the OP:

I don't see any blown-out areas or anything in the frame in question, and as far as looser framing, like I said, just a step or two back with the 50mm.

I like this picture, it reminds me of the 90's. I would white balance the other pictures.

Here is this one's RAW.

I agree that my editing does change the color tones (a lot), but I like to do it in moderation to give it a fresh, somewhat surreal look. If someone wants to, you can edit the file and show me what you would prefer to have (in terms of color).

>>153058
I dig the color palette your use in your shots. The file you posted is a bit oversharpened, but otherwise the processing's fine.

Thanks, I agree. Thanks, everyone, most of you say what other people don't have the balls / technical knowledge to tell me about my pictures. It's sad that I say this, but /p/ is the only worthwhile critique community I know of.

i feel the same way
i hate asking critique anywhere else when all you get it
"wow a stunning image A++++"
here i get
"wow beethy you're a giant faggot"
which is much better

but yeah, critique here is real.

Yeah, I think you're right, at least below the level where you're getting your portfolio reviewed and critiqued by members of Magnum.

have only been here and flickr (and lolDA for beethy)

half the posts here are either trolls or people who dont have much more knowledge on the subject than you.

photosig provides good critiques without the trolls. just be prepared to have your OMG SO AWESOME picture become very run-of-the-mill.

now lurk forever.. both of you.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Agreed, but it's difficult to retroactively decrease the aperture from a Rebel XT raw file.

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>153231
There are some research systems that let you change the focus retroactively. Nothing in production.

But yeah, theoretically you could use something like that to change the DoF in post.

(Assuming the whole thing isn't a giant scam, which is kind of a big assumption)
