85mm 1.8. Is it win? Should I buy it? Or is it a really awkward length on a crop body?
>> Anonymous
Fucking great lens. Image quality and build are excellent. It is kinda long for a crop body though.

Sharp as all hell from what I've seen online with delicious bokeh, but you might wanna check the samples yourself to see if the focal length actually pleases you. Look up samples on flickr.

kinda? 136mm @ 35mm equivalent is pretty damn long

Superb lens. Great for portraits and other things.

It's a very specific lens. Good for portraits and general close-ups. But I'd get a 50mm 1.4 instead.

But if you want it anyway, go for it. Great lens.

Op here.
Yeah, i already have a 50mm 1.4, i was thinking that i'd pick up an 85 1.8 and a 28mm 1.8 and use those three instead of buying a zoom like the 24-70 2.8. Cheaper too

The problem with the 24-70L is that it is epic win.

The 85mm f1.8 is an excellent lens. It is by far the sharpest lens I own. It is my preferred lens for taking portaits, over my 24-105mm L and 70-200 f2.8 IS L.

85mm on a crop lens is not long. It is 136mm equivalent, similar to the 135mm on full-frame, which is already fine for portraits.

Use 85mm (on full-frame) for upper-torso portraits. Use 135mm for head & sholders portraits.

thats pretty much the kit i have except 30mm instead of 28mm and a 20/2.8 as well.

only had the 85 a couple of weeks and so far its been alright, different to get used to on a crop as it is quite long for general "walk around" shooting and more ideal for setup portraits and studio shots perhaps or specific tasks where a medium tele is needed.
still loving the 50 though :D

The 85 1.8 is an amazing lens for how much it costs. Very sharp, nearly perfect and creamy bokeh, USM, not that heavy, and great at 1.8. Worth every penny I paid for it. Yes it is situational on a crop body, but you'll take the best portraits or set-up shots ever with this lens, unless you wanna dish out the dough for an 85 1.2L. This is by far one of Canon's best portrait lenses available, in my opinion.

You will probably use your 50 1.4 more often, as I use my 50 1.8 and 24 2.8 much more than my 85. But when you'd wanna get serious this lens would be the way to go.

85mm : Serious Business.
