personally, i think the nikon d70 with less than 5000 actuations is the best dslr for a beginner. D70/D70s is technically the predecessor to the current d80 line, and imho superior to anything in the budget (d40/d40x/d60) range in terms of durability and easy of use.
I was concerned by the lack of megapxls when i first bought it but after a few shots realized that what other people had said was true, more megapxls is nothing more than a selling point. 10 megapxls is nice to have but saving money and spending it on a good set of lens is a better investment.
you pretty much can overwhelm yourself with indecision when it comes to buying your first dslr. the truth is, there are really only three things to consider.
1) you come for the body, you stay for the lens. you will eventually throw away that body. don't rely too much on it. but a good lens can be a life investment. 2) don't get bogged down by indecision, the time you spend without a camera is time you can't get back.
