trying to figure out the digital camera setting i need to have this effect. this is a christmas tree, the only lights on in the room were the tree lights, no flash, and (obviously) the only thing shown is the lights.

this picture was taken last year on a canon powershot a530 digital camera and i can't figure out how to get it to work again. basically, i just want the camera to pick up the lights and nothing else!

Protip: This is an imageboard. Just upload it here.

Also, the first link didn't work, and I'm not going to bother checking the others.

Just set the ISO low and manually keep the shutter speed fast. I guess you don't have control over stuff like aperture, so don't really bother with that. If you want to practice, get out some Christmas lights( or some other SMALL lights, not a desk lamp) and toy around with the shots.

Like the other guy said. Low ISO, fast shutter speed. Can't set it on auto, 'cause it will meter to try to get everything exposed properly instead of just the lights.

Also, you'll probably want to focus manually as well. I know that the PowerShot A530 can do these things.

So, wanna know how to set all these manual settings? Read the fucking manual.

Sorry, I'm a freaking retard. Full auto, but no flash for the first one. This one was full manual with an exposure bias as low as it would go, no flash, and low ISO. I couldn't tell it to go to any specific shutter speed, but if you can, make it as small a fraction as possible.

Forgot to mention, there was a light source on the right called "daylight," so you should be able to get darker images than my examples when you take the photos. Also, if you have any settings that they tell you to take for bright situations, try and see if it'll help you. You DON'T want to use any night settings, since it'll try to make the image brighter.

Also, you might want to try something to make it even darker on the computer. I suggest GIMPshop or some other free program. Unless you have it already, Photoshop would be a waste of money and a waste of time if you downloaded it. Also, too many people use Photoshop and then pretend that it's more important than their actual skills with a camera. With GIMP or something else you'll still rely on your own abilities to make a shot look good.
