hay /p/
So I played around with that 300mm F/4 L IS today. (that one I borrowed)
Here's the results.

I personally found it a very difficult lens to use, not easy for creative purposes at all.
But it was a fun AND HEAVY experience.

Lemme know what you think.
Should I really buy a proper telephoto lens?
After using this one today, I kinda doubt I need that range.

I hate this picture, and I'll tell you why: Because it's fucking awesome and I didn't take it and I'm jealous. Bastard.

I agree that there's something wrong with the cropping/framing here, but I don't think it's terrible, and I don't actually know how I'd do it better.

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

I don't think that's selective desaturation. I think that's a scene that legitimately only has the one spot of color in it.

>>115819
+1 for technical abilities maybe. But -10 for originality. With rip-off, I mean, almost exact duplicated shot.

>>115826
I sincerely doubt it. It's not black and white, but there's been quite some alterations to the saturation levels on selected places. The curtains make it pretty obvious. You dissapoint me, ac. Sucking up to a girl on 4chan.

Well, first off, it's well established that I'll drool over damn near anything with tits. If you're disappointed about that at this point, you seriously need to lurk the fuck moar.

Secondly, Beethy's a dude.

Third, if it is selective desaturation, it was done skillfully enough to look natural.

As for the selective desaturation, you're wrong.
Let me show you the original though.

Theres no point spending the ridiculous cash on the 300mm f4 lens, when you could get the 70-200 for much less. (And throw on a 1.4x teleconvertor if you need the 300mm range)
If you want a ridiculously long lens for dirt cheap, Tokina 400mm f5.6 SD Close Focus, Sells used for about $225 USD Online.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
>>116059
if i go for any, it'll be that 70-200 f/4 L IS
i used it.. and i liked the range much more than this 300mm
it was a good learning experience though
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>116105

That is one I've been tempted by recently too. Hard to find anyone who has a bad thing to say about it, other than the aperture maybe not being quite enough for them.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
>>116108
IMO the amazing IS makes up for it.
the 2.8 is not affordable at all :[
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>116133

The difference in IS between them isn't too great, but the price is! It's some hike, isn't it? A bit sore about that, but I suppose it's the weight of extra glass that is costing.

I like the idea of the 2.8 zooms for their advantages though, so I might just keep saving and hold off on the temptation to get the f/4 sooner.
>> Anonymous
I don't know about you guys but if I'm about to shell out 1,000$ for a new lens, an extra 500$ isn't going to stop me.

But the extra weight and size might.

Also, not a richfag.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>116162

Then surely you only own all top end professional gear?

The difference between a $500 lens, a $1000 lens and a $1500 lens is significant for even the keen amateur.

With Canon I could pay £225 (or even as cheap as 175 with limitations) for the common macro lenses or up to £900 or more for the top end of the scale of macro lenses. If the price doesn't matter at all then you should be using a Hasselblad with that tasty 39MP back. Why compromise?

The macro lenses are all about on a par with each other. Some of the cheaper ones can be a little better than the more expensive ones too.

Come on, Blacknigger, be reasonable.

I'm not saying LOL BUY THE MOST EXPENSIVE SHIT AND PROFIT!

Photography is a hobby for me, I don't make money out of it, it's all for my enjoyment. I'm just saying in my case, key words being "I don't know about you guys", I don't see the point of spending 1,000$ of your hard earned money and miss the faster 2.8 lens which is only 500$ extra.

But yeah, "I don't know about you guys".
>> Blacknigger !!FAL60j/9hyg
>>116171

If $1000 is a lot of money to you, then $500 isn't going to be chump change. I'd agree if you were only talking about $100 either way, but %50 is a big mark up on a price. You have to draw the line somewhere and a %50 jump is usually enough to start to push it into another price bracket.

I like to get the best I can too as it means I only have to buy once, but it's often better for some to compromise and get that lens or equipment now and shoot with it than have it in some distant future. Plus, that $500 or whatever could have gone towards other things too.

Thanks for the new name. My super(not really)secret identity for rescuing damsels in distress and so on. :)
>> Vincent
>>116172
I usually start cheap and work my way up :)
First macro lens was a reversed 50mm f1.8 (BR-2A + Manual everything)
Then I bought a Sigma 90mm f2.8 for $125 (its old but its AF, and 1:1 with its own close-up filter)
Now I think if i get another macro lens it will be the 105mm VR f2.8.

I don't consider buying and then later selling the inferior equipment a waste of money, It can teach you a lot and gives you a good idea of what you actually need in a lens.

This is /p/, due to the small number of new threads posted everyone posts in one or two threads so they can eventually go pretty off topic.

On the other boards (esp without having to make new photos for new threads) people post new threads to ask questions etc where as we just muck about in existing ones.
