hi /p/.
So... I am going to New York soon, where I believe cameras are much cheaper than Europe. It has been a couple of years since I really knew everything about any and all cameras out in the market, so I am a bit at a loss. www.dpreview.com doesn't offer the help I need, since they refuse to recommend one specific camera.
so the question - what to buy, if my price range is around 1000$.
It has to be something much better than my Nikon5700 which I love. I have no lens/flash or anything lying around. used/new? refurbished? what's the way to go these days?
thanks in advance, and sorry for the noob question.
I photograph everything, I can live without a huge zoom, and buy that later. I am very technically oriented, but the camera should also be able to take a point-and-click snaps on demand.

Leica M8 should fit the bill nicely.

But srsly, I can't tell from your post whether you want an SLR or a point-and-shoot. Are you after a camera to drop in your pocket for quick holiday "wish you were here" snaps and shots of friends, or do you want a real camera for photography?

Budgeting a kilobuck. Talk of buying more lenses later. I'd say he's looking for an SLR.

I'd recommend just picking up one of the low end Canon or Nikon dSLRs. I use The Rebel XTi myself, which goes for around $800 with kit lens.

(And given the quoted budget, maybe a fifth of a Leica M8 would fit the bill... ;) )

dSLR is probably what he wants. For $1000 USD(?), I'm guessing that you'd probably find a good body and a mediocre lens. Are you willing to invest more money into an extra lens or two later? If not, then you'll probably end up with one or two lenses, one which might be the kit lens.

Personally, I went for a film SLR body and bought some cheap primes with it. I find that it's more difficult to find a good standard zoom lens for cheap. This is probably what you want if you're looking to take point-and-shoot pictures quick. If you are going the Canon route, I hear the EF 28-105mmm is pretty average and is within your budget if you purchase the Rebel XTi.

op here.
The Leica M8 is not relevant. The prices right now for it are 4000$ and up! not to mention the fact that it has a retro design that I don't like. For this kind of money you can get the Nikon D2Xs or a Canon EOS5d with excellent optics, so I don't see the point in the Leica. Maybe it's just me being a noob.

So it seems I should look at Nikon and Canon, nothing changed much in the market since my last buy I guess. the Rebel XTi looks nice. I'm just hoping that the upgrade from my beloved coolpix5700 is worth the money.
Is there any competetion for the XTi in this price range?

Oh my Lord yes.

There's the Nikon D40x, the Pentax K100d, and the Sony Alpha A100, just off the top of my head.

Also, there's the cheaper Rebel XT and the Nikon D40 if you want to have a couple hundred extra bucks to spend on optics.

I know, the Leica thing was just a joke. We all wish we had enough money to afford one, I'm sure.

I'd actually encourage you to check out the Pentax K100D, especially if you're on a budget. Pentax primes are cheap, in plentiful quantities on the used market, and have been compared to Zeiss and Leica in terms of their optical quality. The kit zoom is just fine, too. Also: in-body vibration reduction! Hell yeah!

I've been thinking about switching over to the Pentax K10D, myself.

Be sure to check out Adorama and B&H for good deals on used equipment. KEH is good for used equipment also. Google their websites.
