Because you don't know what you're doing?

Try turning the knob to shutter priority (The 'Tv' setting on the knob on the top). Then use the little dial behind the shutter button to change the shutter speed.

Or shoot in manual, where you can pick both the shutter speed and the aperture.

He can't figure out how to set the shutter speed on Canon's simplest SLR. Do you really think he's gonna do better if he has to choose both aperture and shutter?

Learning the relationships between and properties of different shutter speeds, apertures, and ISO speeds is not hard or time-consuming at all.

I've literally taught it to someone, including examples and practice, in fifteen minutes.

Exposure is the absolute simplest thing in photography, especially with TTL metering.
