Have you used IS before?

The sample shot in the OP looks good. Keep that up and you'll do fine.

ISO 3200, Av mode at f/2.8, monopod.

Shoot as many images as you have space on the card for, and maybe you will get one or two good ones.

It's my camera but the newspaper lens, that's why I don't know it's IS or not. Calm down, christ.

Opening pic is not mine, just put up so you have a reference what the thread is about.

the 40D came out of college money and I've had it for maybe 6 months with kit lens still cause i'm poor.

Anyways, any tips?

Good idea about the monopod; I don't think I would have thought to ask for that too.

I wouldn't really recommend 3200 unless the intended final destination is newsprint.

It doesn't really matter if its IS or not. IS is completely useless in sports photography.

No flash, 1600/2.8/250. Flash, 800/4-5.6/250.

It's not *completely* useless. Won't help you with subject movement, but it will help with the subject movement being compounded with camera shake.

In volleyball, your strategy is to not compose.. thats a bad word, you have all of half a second to "compose", just try to keep the camera level and you'll be alright.

You want to aim and pick your shots carefully, I find the best ones are when they set the girls up front up for a spike. So itl go like this

->serve (get this)
its either an ace or it gets hit.
If it gets hit, you probably won't see it. But if they set it up, aim for the 3rd girl, she'll probably spike it. You'll have time to find her and compose that shot in advance, which is your best bet.

oh sorry i misread that, I thought you said compose instead of compounded

yea it doesn't compound either, since if you're shooting fast enough to eliminate subject movement there is no effect on camera shake either

Shoot from up high with a long lens, or courtside with a medium-to-long lens for the rare layering shot or getting the lower digs, etc. You can imagine the plays and what would look good from where, so pick a good angle, camp out, get a few good plays, and switch positions at least two or three times to get some variety.

You might want to get longer than 200mm if you can. We shoot it with a 300 on crop bodies, and it's still not really long enough. It's a shitty sport to shoot, for me anyways. I just don't enjoy it, it's never really graphic the way basketball or football or even baseball are.

ISO 1600, wide open, and hope you've got enough light to stop action. It should if it's lit for TV. Some gyms really aren't though, sooo... good luck.

Only jackass newbs blind the players with a flash when they have a 2.8 lens.

Besides, your flash has to be hella powerful unless you are actually on the court with the players.

Not the case, at ISO 400+ 10-20 feet away the flash (430 EX) will be firing at probably 1/16th power max.

ive been shooting hs sports for years, flash is like mandatory lol. You'd be surprised how shitty even a 2.8 lens is in a dark gym.

And the main reason you're shooting with flash is to overpower the indoor gym lighting, anyways. If they have those cycling lights that give off redish/greenish crap, you can't WB it, so you need to overpower it. That's why, with flash, you shoot at 5.6 - so the gym lighting isn't powerful enough to affect your lighting setup, but the flash will be.

1/16 power on a flash with a 43 meter guide at 105mm is still fucking annoying when you are trying to concentrate on winning a game.

The GAME and the PLAYERS are more important than the twat that is there to document the game.
