First time with a macro Anonymous
C&C is welcome. Had some fun with this, but macro shooting is definitely different.

The dragonfly and the bumble bee are excellent.

Why thank you. The bee was pure luck, but that's half of photography I suppose.

bump for c&c

you went on an overcast day, which is good. though, you need to try and get much closer, or choose your subjects surroundings better.

How would I go about picking better surroundings? I had to work with what I was given, and half of these were taken on marshy ground, so footing was precarious.

I'm open to suggestion though!

don't give me that bullshit

move leaves, change angles, stage subjects, utilize your dof, pay attention to framing, pay attention to the animals.

Okay. Next time I'm sure I'll do better.

Do you think a longer focal length would work better? Borrowed my friend's 60mm macro and I had to get really close to stuff in order to get good detail. Or am I doing it wrong.

For dragonflies a longer focal length would be very useful. They are skittish creatures. Anything that scares easy can benefit from the longer length. Just keep in mind the minimum focus distance and if that will be a problem for you. If you want to do a lot of indoors work then a 180 or so could be a problem. The longer ones will also mean you'll have to take into account the shutter speed and shake, etc. but that's a matter of learning how to use the lens.

I find a shorter length useful for indoors work or for when I am in cramped or awkward conditions that do not allow me to simply move back. It's very much a matter of personal taste and the situation you are in.

Have a think about it or borrow one if you can.

That's what I was thinking. I was looking at the Sigma 150 or Canon 100 macros. The Sigma seems a better choice but on a crop body I feel it would be difficult to deal with, and I would probably always have to use a tripod or monopod to steady the camera.

Any advice?
