D40 Q
Shit another thread, yeah, I know. I'm actually one of the few that has complained about the amount of threads about new camera. Anyway, I'm bidding on a new D40 after buying a S3 IS and ultimately being disappointed. Hopefully this camera will perk up my photography eye as it has diminished lately. Also, what lenses do you all recommend? I'm thinking about buying the Nikon 55-200mm VR to go along with the kit lens. Should these two be sufficient for general use?

So, /b/, what do you think of the D40, who has one, and to the people who do, post your best D40 pics!

TL;DR: post your suggestions for lenses and best D40 pics, 'cause I'm getting one.

Yeah, I know. I'm sorry.

Thanks for your input. I'll look to buy the 55-200 VR after a little bit with the kit lens.

The kit lens on the D40 is good especially considering its price.

I have a D40 with a 50mm f/1.8 lens. Its not AF-S so your stuck on manual focus but its still pretty awesome and cheap.

the 50mm 1.8 is pretty good, but yeah Manual Focus on the D40 (deal with it) and for a weeee bit over $100 totally worth it for a fast lens

The manual focusing on the D40 won't bother me one bit. I begged to be able to manually focus while using the S3 IS. That's for the tip on the 1.8, looks like a great buy.

Or you can get the D50 and not have to worry about AF-S only bullshit.

Or you can read my fucking post and see that I'm not bothered with having to manually focus.

Get the double kit, 18-55 and 55-200 VR and a 50mm f/1.8. Looks like the things you're gonna be shooting with (D40) ain't gonna warrant some nice hefty lenses to go along with it. For USD200++, any VR lenses is a steal. The 18-200 ain't worth the hoopla everyone's harping on about.

The 18-200 *is* worth the hoopla. It's specially great for lazy bastards like me.

manual focus with the d40 (and other cropped sensor cameras) can be a huge pain due to the small and dark viewfinder. relying only on the focus indicator dot often produces unsatisfactory results.

i use manual lenses with my d40, but only when i really have unlimited time to fiddle around with the focus.

Well, I love how small and compact it is and packs such a wallop. However, for $700 it's way out of my price range. D40 arrives Wednesday/Thursday! :D
