I'm a big fan of the Canon A6x0 series.

i second that, used it for a while. pretty fast, good autofocus, zeiss lens, very easy to handy and thin. i'd get one again, even used!

Not OP but I'm wondering if there's a good pocket camera where you can control aperture in order to achieve DOF. Like a rangefinder but not $5000.

there are quite a few (canon's better ones do, for sure. hell, my girlfriend's samsung does.), but with a major caveat: the sensors are so small on p&s cameras that there's no huge difference between the two extremes of 2.8 and 8.

a lot of them let you nowadays...no clue what being able to change aperture has to do with being a rangefinder though, but yeah. it doesnt really act the same way as it does on an SLR because of the tiny ass sensor.

Seconded. They're great cameras.

There's ALWAYS DOF. Just more or less, depending on the aperture and the size of the sensor.

I might get flamed for saying this since everyone's already happy with the current set of answers, but I recently bought a Canon Powershot SD1000 and I like it a lot. 7.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, and a great macro function for a point and shoot( though that was just a nice bonus that I found when I bought it).

If you put it at the tele end of the zoom range and aperture at minimum and are reasonably close to your subject, the narrow DoF on a small-sensor P&S is quite noticeable.

You get a greater DOF with a smaller sensor.

...

True, but I don't see how that's in any way relevant to my explanation on how to narrow one's DoF on a P&S.

It's because I'm black.

OP, could you give more information on your current camera?

Pocket cameras tend to be too expensive... look for one with IS, and the LEAST number of Megapixels possible, from a name you've heard of (canon, nikon, panasonic, etc..)
