Hey /p/, newfag here but I was curious about something.

Today, I ordered a Canon EOS Rebel XSi to replace my aging Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D.

Did I do good?
>> Anonymous
yes

best entry level camera you can buy today, if price is no question
>> Anonymous
No. You can't use your old lenses and the 5D still would take perfectly good pictures.

>>196863

I am not getting rid of the 5D until I have at least three lenses. Wouldn't make sense.
>> Meese !iZn5BCIpug
You did fucking terrible go kill yourself.

Why's that?

because he is a troll. ignore him.

No
Why would anyone get an xsi when they could get a 40d/30d for around the same price?? Second you cant use your minolta lenses now gg.
>> Anonymous
>>196866
But why get rid of the 5D at all? Unless it's borked, it takes just as good pictures as the day you bought it.
>> Anonymous
>>196874

I got the XSi for $400, just the body of course.

How much do 40D's retail for?
>> Anonymous
>>196880

Good point, I probably won't now that I think about it.

Don't want to be hassled with shipping it out to some asshole and what not.
>> Anonymous
>>196886

It'll be good for when you want to dabble with film.
>> Anonymous
>>196886
So why get the XSi?
>> Anonymous
>>196891

The 5D is old almost four years old.

Konica Minolta stopped production of them and then shut down their photography line almost immediately after.

So, if it breaks I am pretty boned.

minolta is gay

Are you OP?

I think this is another one of those fail asking for buying advice threads.

Like the guy with a 5D asking if a G9 is good.

Like the guy with the 10D with a bunch of EF-S lenses.

This is a faggot lying about getting a 450D body for $400 pretending to have a KM 5D just so we give him advice on the 450D.

fail and you gonna get scammed
>> Anonymous
>>196902

Yeah, I am the OP.

And no, I didn't order it off a website typed mostly in moonspeak, or eBay.

Seriously, I just used Froogle.
>> Anonymous
>>196906

anyone can list on froogle

link to the store

the XT body still sells for $400.. this is hilarious

Cause, you know, sony doesn't support KM products or anything.

Also, enjoy ur crippled camera.
>> Anonymous
>>196943

what about it is crippled?
>> Anonymous
>>196850

why is the canon so much bigger than the konica minolta?

is it because one is amateur and one is pro level?

Have fun with your cheap plastic, overpriced POS. Oh, but it's a Canon. It must be good.

How do you not see the shitty construction when you hold an XTi?

d60 fag jealous his camera has no focusing motor

no live view

no 14 bit raw

no 3" screen

no 3.5 fps

largest viewfinder in class

if not a nikonfag, sony or pentax fag, then take out the live view comment, rest still stands

"Did I do good?"

It should be typed as,"Did I do well?"

Unless you completed community service recently, you did not "do good."

For old shitty lenses? No thanks.

>>no live view
On a crappy fixed screen? What's the point?

>>no 14 bit raw
Cause there's a huge difference between 12 and 14 bit? Lol, no.

>>no 3" screen
An extra .5" doesn't make your shitty menu and display any better.

>>no 3.5 fps
And that .5 fps is absolutely critical to getting that perfect shot?

>>largest viewfinder in class
A whopping less than 9% increase! Congrats!

>For old shitty lenses? No thanks.
If you can't autofocus fast primes, then good luck manually focusing on your screen that doesn't have that extra 9%

also 9-point AF vs. 3 areas

I think that's worth the extra $200. Anyway, the first good lens you buy is going to be more than the body.

0/10 for entire post

But compared to the advantage of a swivel screen, it's still bloody pointless. It'll also foster that bad habit of shooting at arm's length which is still kinda weird for a heavy dSLR so people would end up holding it with both hands but at a certain distance from their face.
>> Anonymous
>>197272I don't actually know what you mean either, sorry.

i'm not>>197272

but if the camera is eye level on a tripod, it's easier to compose with the LCD than leaning in to look at the viewfinder, that and you get 100% coverage through live view

but the original point was to answer that guy saying it was "overpriced"

it does offer more for the money, if those things are worthless to you, that's a whole other argument
>> Anonymous
>>197274
Yeah, it definitely does, and I wish my camera had a swivel screen for epic waist-level shooting, but it still does have a purpose without it.

>>197276
How would using it at arm's length on a tripod encourage using it at arm's length handheld?
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
LiveView is _great_ ... on a tripod or other stable mount. For fine art photography, I just can't see using anything except LiveView. Quite simply, LiveView (particularly when coupled with the grid lines) is perfect for this type of work. Also, useful for Macro.
It's mostly worthless handheld. Even with a tilt-screen I can't see using it more.

>>197264
Oh, yes I know. But due to my present and temporary financial situation I can't really afford to go for full-frame lenses. The tradeoffs are just too large. For example, the 18-55IS and 55-250IS were purchased at a price that just can't be matched. The Sigma 30mm 1.4 does not have an affordable comparable lens (I can't afford the 35L...not even close, and the Canon 28mm 1.8 works out to give 90% less light [a bit more than 2/3 of a stop...wtf Sigma and Canon?] as well as being less usable wide open).

The main reason I'm not willing to take it further is exactly that - the 17-55IS isn't FF, the 10-22 isn't FF, etc. So in a few years when I can afford it, I'll just buy a 5Dmk2 or so along with a decent lens setup (most likely around a $5k budget at that point).
