Hi /p/
Which one of these is the best?
IR shot with Hoya R72.
I shot this in non-IR too, but the forest became really underexposed/the sky became very overexposed and I prefer IR over HDR.

In this shot I threw rocks in the water, trying to get this misty-ish effect

These are all good.

First is my favorite.

Did OP have to do anything to his camera for these, or was the filter enough?

this one's the best so far

really unique shot though - the way the clouds were at that moment makes your pic stick out from the others like this (looks really creamy)

great work!

The IR filter and channel mixer in photoshop was all I did.

I was thinking about getting an R72 for my (unmodified) D400 which apparently lets enough IR through to make it usable.

Has anyone actually taken IR-shots with a D400?

Assuming you mean 400D (i.e., Rebel XTi in the US) instead of D400 (i.e., something I've never heard of), then yes.

Yes, 400D. Sorry for the/my confusion.

Thank you.

Shorter exposure than expected, even for f/1.8.

>>76600
The 400D will do the trick. Perhaps not as good as the D70, but it sure will work.
>> Vincent
>>76601
The 400D bites for IR actually, My friend has one and got soo frustrated trying to take pictures, His shutter speeds were 30 seconds long f8 and still underexposed.

You can do it of course, just the Filter infront of the 400D eats up IR light like crazy! The D70 and D50 are pretty good for it, Handholdable even at F2 and wider.

f/8 might be the problem?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>76620
f/8 definitely the problem.

>>76612
The 400D is handholdable for IR on sunny days at f/2.0 and wider.

Difference between F8 and F2 is 4 stops.

HEres the shot he sent me from the dominican republic, ITs on a sunny day, Aka brightest you will probably ever get for IR.

F9 5 seconds, ISO 100

Difference between F9 and F1.8 say is roughly 5 stops of light,
Difference between ISO 100 and 1600 is another 4 stops
So 9 stop difference to get the exact exposure at ISO 1600 F1.8, 1/100th of a second (If i calculated that right)

So the picture is underexposed probably about 4 stops, Go back 4 stops and you now have 1/8th of a second...

Continuing the comparison, heres a D50 shot handheld. On a sunny day.
ISO 1600, F3.5, 1/40th of a second.
Properly exposed.

Theres a huge difference, I would really not recommend the Xti / 400D for IR photography, unless your going to mod it.

I was going to, but then I realized that Vincent's actually right. ISO1600, f/2.0, 1/10th and it was still a bit underexposed (although, granted, that was through my window and it's a bit overcast. But still)

Maaaan, I hate it when that happens.

Srsly u guyz, how do you get that effect on the leaves? Mine always look like shit and I have to photoshop like hell to get it to look somewhat like that. Are you also photoshoping enormously or are you doing something else? What about white balance?

1/10th is hand-holdable for web use.

I'll hazard a guess the process goes a little like this:
Put filter on, Point camera at grass, custom WB. Take photo, swap red and blue channels, post to /p/

Give this man a prize He get it down to the Exact order!

Now if you have an extra bit of cash laying around, modding a DSLR = insta win. (or just fun)
(ISO 200 since it won't show in the exif)

Thanks. Also, how do you focus? I use auto focus without the filter, then put it on and switch to manual focus.
>> Vincent
>>76685
That works, but its a ton of work, For Tripod work I marked the Hyperfocal distance for F8, and used that for landscapes (Hyperfocal is the distance where everything from infinity to as close as possible is in focus)

IR focuses slightly different though, and that was for my 18-55.

I used to just Go manual focus, Guess the distance and slowly adjust the focus while taking 5 or 6 pics, Since its digital its not a big deal to do that.
IF you don't have a tripod that can be a pain, But since its mostly landscapes that you take pics of its a larger margin of error
