Looking into a EF 50mm f/1.4 USM since I mostly shoot at around 50mm on my cheap kit lens any way and I'm looking for one prime lens to mostly live on my camera (1.8 sounds good but. . I'm not paying :). I've never bothered with any kind of filter to help protect my cheap kit lens, so is there a particular one you'd recommend for this lens? I looked at canon's accessories page and they don't have any that specifically fit the 50/1.4 Thanks for any help. .

What do you have in mind for it?

A lens hood will protect it from most things. Are you taking somewhere it is likely to get damaged or dirty?

Sorry if I was unclear. The lens is already picked out (the 50/1.4).

What do I have in mind for the filter? A UV filter or anything to generally help prevent me from little scratches to the lens without effecting my shots too much. . I've never used a filter so I don't know really.

Canon tells you right on their page to put a UV filter on your lens just to help protect it, but then there's none listed on the 50/1.4's accessories page. I don't want to buy something that doesn't fit.

The filter size is 58mm.

Yes, anywhere my little sister is within shooting range. Nearly kicked it last time she was jumping all over me while I was trying to take pictures of her.

If that is the case I'd suggest the hood before the filter. A hood can be rubber and take the blow and flop or bounce or a plastic one can crack and absorb the impact. A glass filter is likely to crack with a blow into it and either she's going to get a handful of glass or your lens element will.

The generic UV filter is good for stopping scratches and dirt and so on. Not kick boxing girls.

A hood is nice if you don't mind the extra size. It certainly helps protect it, and really really really helps against flare, ghosting, low contrast, etc. Get a filter for sure though. Make sure it's multicoated, otherwise it's going to flare like a bitch and really degrade your image quality.

I don't own the 50/1.4, but I've borrowed one and shot with it. A small, screw-on rubber lens hood on it radically improved the already great handling.

Whether or not you go with a filter (don't; more layers of glass = more flare), get a lens hood. A nice old metal one if you can... 58mm thread is 58mm thread.
