Sorry if this is terrible cliche

Steve McCurry, 1984.

McCurry has a book titled Portraits, that. It's composed over a hundred pictures of people from different cultures. You might like it. Also, it wasn't his only great portrait, that's for sure.

I own it.

He's my favorite photographer.

I actually prefer his candid portraits, mostly.

This is another of my favorites.

i got that for my girlfriend at the time for her birthday because she was "toootally into photography... like portraits and stuff". she might have flipped through it once without really looking. it was kinda disappointing.

(may be a stupid question)

Is this a real photo from WWII? The guy with the gun looks a little shooped maybe.

Left:
Halsman's wife holding the chair (cropped just out of frame).

Right: Cat wranglers. Assistant with a bucket of water

In frame: Pictures and stool and such suspended from the ceiling by wires.

Halsman says one, two, three: Cats and water get chucked. Four: Dali jumps. Click.

Then the assistants collect and calm the kitties, mop up the water, and refill the bucket while Halsman develops the picture (he was shooting 4x5 sheet film, so he could develop one at a time).

Took 'em 28 tries to get it right. Those must have been some absurdly understanding and patient cats.

(I might be wrong about which side the water is coming from. I've never quite understood how they got it to curve exactly how it's curving.)

Did he really go develop right between takes?

>I've never quite understood how they got it to curve exactly how it's curving.

Maybe a strong fan mounted right above the spot. Just a guess, though.

Would you keep setting up this huge cat-chucking production if you'd already gotten the shot?

Would you risk having to bring everyone back and setting everything up again if you found out later in the darkroom that you *hadn't* gotten the shot?

I suppose it's more likely that he did 'em in batches (especially since, by my math, he was averaging about 12 minutes per shot. Probably not enough time to set everything up, take the shot, develop, and fix each time), but he certainly didn't take all 28 and then develop them all afterwards.

He didn't kill his family. He only killed a bunch of cops, that they knew of. The guy was a VC officer.
