Sup /p/.

If DSLR bodies were built with a thin glass filter on the lens mount, like a UV filter where you could just screw the lens on top.

What would be the problem with this? I'm sure it would pretty much get rid of sensor dust.

...you'd then just get dust on the glass filter, which could easily get scratched as well or broken

couldn't you just clean the filter then though which would be safer than your sensor

assuming you look after it... like any other fucking lens.

you can clean a glass filter in the same way you'd clean a lens.

why exactly didn't the idea catch on?

halp?

Near-negligible image quality loss, but it would probably make servicing a bit tougher, considering dust will probably find its way there from other divisions in the system.

Because Sigma is a terrible company.

My guess would be the same reason the M8 had a very thin IR filter. While the issues were more severe owing to the M mount's short FFD than it would be on any SLR, apparently filters over the sensor can cause internal reflections, especially with very wide lenses. Keeping the thickness of the filters down apparently solves/fixes the problem. Sticking another thing over the sensor might cause this problem to show up in even in large FFD SLR cameras.

someone correct me if i'm wrong but most lenses stick inside the mirror box so you can't just stick a piece of glass in there because it'd be in the way

They don't, there's usually enough space between the lens and the mirror box. What this guy said sounds more reasonable however...
