dust inside the lens Anonymous
After using my brand new Nikkor 85mm for a day, I noticed that there was a noticeable speck of dust right in the middle of the inside of the lens. I read in may online forums that it won't affect image quality all that much, but will there be long-term effects afterwards if I just leave it there (like in the case of fungi)?
>> Anonymous
Dust seems to agglomerate if you ask me. Small speck of dust will just grow larger and then it will definitely affect image quality. You can leave it there if you want, but it would just annoy me having it there.
>> Anonymous
They definitely grow at a slow but exponential level. Just like in an air filter. An already dusty air filter will gather more dust than a clean air filter because the dust itself catches even more dust.
>> Anonymous
Oh Jesus Christ. The dust will not steadily grow to occlude your entire lens and ruin all your photos. Most, if not all, lenses have a few specks of dust inside and it doesn't affect image quality. When you use old lenses, they might have quite a few specks of dust inside and it still doesn't affect image quality. Just leave it there, because as soon as you pay to get the lens disassembled and cleaned, another speck of dust will take it's place. If you use your equipment, get used to it being a little dirty.

DUST IS STRONG

DUST WILL GROW LARGER

A tiny speck will not matter.

Statement repeating facts about dust growing exponentially. Also gearwhoring.

No, not gearwhoring. This is the first time for me to work with a dslr (and this will be my only lens for a while) so I'm still a bit paranoid. It doesn't seem to affect images, but it kinda bugs me knowing that it's in a place where it isn't supposed to be.

That sucks man, but i've had dust in some of my lenses for awhile, it's fine, doesn't do anything to the lens, any new dust doesn't congregate in the same spot either. If you're really paranoid, maybe return it and get a new one?

Woah, interesting combo... the D80 and an 85mm f/1.8. It's going to be a really interesting period! Don't worry about the dust. If it's really bad, you can get it cleaned by Nikon if it's under warranty, but I doubt you'll ever see it affect image quality. This is especially true if you don't stop down much. For instance, I only see dust on my sensor at like f/11-f/32. It's hazy at f/8. That lens is meant to be used wide open, my friend.

Pic semi related, though this is the 85mm f/1.4, which is a considerably bigger hunk of optics.

The colours are terrible there. It's like Ken Rockwell's saturation TO THE MAX. Disney Land here we come!

Aha, this is the only photo I have with the 85mm f/1.8

In the store, lawl.

Sorry, I shoot bright stuff. Colors and saturation are pretty much untouched in that shot. The 85 is just really punchy, and there were some great colors that afternoon. It's part of why I asked them if I could take their picture. Awesome warm reflected light from the building across the street.

I think you just need to adjust your camera or PP settings to get it to look sweet.

I've been meaning to pick up an 85mm 1.8 (canon though). It's a really nice range, it's just that it's $200 more here in canada than the u.s. I'll have to drive down there and pick one up eventually.

Uh, buy it from B&H?

Even after shipping, which is like $25 for 2-3 days UPS Expedited, it will be cheaper than buying local.

UPS rapes you in brokerage
up to 60% of the cost of the good

No such thing as brokerage or duty fees for photographic equipment.

THE MORE YOU KNEW.

No such thing as CROSS BORDER DUTIES on photographic equipment.
Don't be a retard, Even Canada customs (through Canada post) charges you $5 for processing + Tax. (tax of course)
UPS charges you ridiculous amounts of brokerage fees, and paperwork fees, and fees to bill you fees.
FedEX does the same thing.

I have received multiple bills from UPS because people forgot that USPS is different from UPS. I could get some and show you but you are just trolling.

Me again. I will quote the website but I know this from my own experience. THERE ARE NO HIDDEN FEES when buying photo shit from the US.

http://www.photoprice.ca/article/tax-duty-brokerage-demystified

"When USPS isn't available, use FedEx Priority or UPS Expedited. These shipping options have brokerage fees included. Avoid UPS/FedEx Ground."

"Most photographic equipment is duty free, when imported from most countries, including the States. This means you pay no duty! This includes most products such as SLR and point-and-shoot cameras and lenses. "

Suck it, faggot.

$440 after shipping, sure beats the $640 i'd be buying it for here. It says US warranty... im wondering if that would cover me as well. All my canon warranty cards say canada and US, do you guys in the US have cards that say canada as well?

You posted this before my previous post.

Ugh, where the fuck do you live?

I buy everything I have from B&H in New York and shipping fees are in the $25 range, extra for any additional item.

I have never been hit by duty or brokerage. You only pay taxes, which is pretty damn obvious.

Canon warranties are US _AND_ Canada.

No such thing for Nikon.

Canada, Specifically BC (Vancouver)
I have heard of UPS having deals with either B+H or Adorama (I forget) to charge you $5 processing and they won't bill you a month later like they normally do (for cross border stuff)

HOWEVER, I challenge anyone on here to send something camera related UPS ground (Cheaper the shipping higher the brokerage fees) across the border. And one month later in the mail you will get a bill (the reciever) For between 30 and 60% of the insured value of the item.

.....

Which is why you DON'T use UPS Ground and use Expedited.

Hey, let's use the cheapest shipping option and get raped afterwards!

Dude, what the hell man?

AGAIN, FOR THE RECORD.

UPS Expedited + B&H = NO hidden fees. You only pay taxes and you get your shit in 2-3 days.

It was bought from Japan and has the international warranty card, but sadly, it's not good enough for the local Nikon arm (I'll still have to pay to get it cleaned).

From what I've read, it's not uncommon for new lenses to have dust in them and it won't really matter much unless it's on the rear element. I guess I'll let it sit there for a while until I get my other lens.
