How does /p/ feel about photographing the homeless in America or any other country? Is it exploiting them?
>> Anonymous
It can be. It all comes down to intention. If someone photographs them with an attitude towards garnering money, approval, or "a kewl shot, man," then of course it is. If someone photographs them with an eye towards art and humanism, in real relation to them as a human being, to communicate something about their condition in particular or the human condition overall, then of course it isn't.
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
yeah, I was about to say that. If they're photographing them to highlight the problems in society and to show people that there ARE still people out there suffering, then I think it's one of the most noble things you can do with a camera. Otherwise, yes I do think it's exploitation.

well put by both of you. Brady brought the horror of war to his Civil war era audience. The WPA paid great photographers to document the suffering during the Depression.

James Nachtwey is a really good example, too. I think any picture that really evokes emotion and sympathy from you towards the people in it is a shining example of this, and his work definately makes you wish there was something you could do.

The word exploitation carries with it the connotation that the exploitee suffers as a result of the exploitation. If you are not hurting someone, then it follows that it is not exploitation.
That said, I ask before I take a portrait of someone in the street (as opposed to a stree-style grab shot in passing).

Ok I think I'm going to start photographing homeless people again. I just always thought it was too easy and didn't carry any real message.

If they're hungry and living in a shelter or out in the open and some guy with $1,000 in his hand starts snapping shots of the Random Exotic Poor Pitiful Crazy Alcoholic Homeless Man (TM), then yeah, that's going to hurt.

Ever actually talked to someone who's homeless and length?

who cares about exploiting them
Yes, im photographing them for approval and coolness
so fucking what?
What's the difference between photographing a homeless and photographing just an average stranger?
What? they deserve more respect because they live on the street? fuck that. I take photo's of what I want, when I want. Homeless people can fucking die for all I care, as long as I get my masterpiece shot in, I'm happy as can be and even if it sells for a million, the homeless whore isnt getting a penny cos its all me baby, ITS ALL ME. my camera, my skills, my eye and my fucking photoshop.

Its a dog eat dog world and I don't have time for some worthless piece of shit.

>What's the difference between photographing a homeless and photographing just an average stranger?

0/10 troll but I'm going to address this:

They're looked down on society, there's a million stupid stereotypes about them, they're vulnerable, never any privacy, they're treated like pieces of shit, or as one of them once told me, like an "eight-headed monster." They're constantly either abused or ignored. They don't know how or when their next meal is coming, whether they'll get a spot at the shelter that night. And here comes some idiot with a camera not interested in who they are or their circumstances, but just another stock shot of a homeless person- that's the worse part. You'd be stripping away their individual humanity, under assault every minute having to depend on others for their existence, and not even being turned down but just walked past silently, even when they verbally ask, and making them Just Another Homeless Person.

Also, go fuck yourself for picking up a camera or any other artistic tool for this reason.

you make me laugh.
you make me laugh very hard.

Do you know why? Because I don't fucking care about all that bullshit about "oh they feel lonely" "they feel like pieces of shit" "they are treated like pieces of shit" whatever.

seriously...

in the end this is what it comes down to:

I will take photo's of whatever the fuck I want to for whatever fucking reason I want to.. and I will do with those photos whatever I wish.

Example:
I will take photos of homeless people to induce empathy and emotion in people who see the photo and I will make money from this. Do I need to give a fuck about the actual homeless person to do this? no. Do I, personally, need to believe in this sort of emotive, moving art? no.
But I will do it. I will do things in life with a purpose and a goal and I will achieve these goals in whatever ways I wish.

End note:
homeless people. They are treated like shit. Why? Because they are as worthless as shit.
Sure, maybe some of them didn't really have a shot in life. Maybe there actually is a legitimate reason why they are there. Do I give a fuck? no.

What are you going to do? Convince this cold-blooded heartless photographer to start empathising with these scum? Get outta here.

They are merely pixels to me. No story. No significance. But I see the significance of these pixel to others. And that is where I exploit it. That is where idiots like you are different to superior beings such as myself - I know better than to waste my time caring about such scum, such needy, selfish scum

Think about it.

Is that supposed to be some kind of call? Am I supposed to feel like I have just been put in my place? Is that your best?
'cause honestly, my 16 year-old brother could think of something more insulting.

Seriously... anyone who actually wants to argue against me on this issue. Please, step right up. I know I am right and no one can prove my ideologies wrong.

I dont bother arguing with people who belive they are right in the same way i dont argue with christians that god doesnt exist.

You can belive whatever you want to belive and in much the same way you think that it doesnt affect you because you dont care about the homeless, im sure it wont affect you that everyone here thinks you're a peice of trash that would be ignored as we give our life savings to a random drunk meth'ed up hobo.

You make your decisions, you stick by them.

I don't know about USA

but in this prosperous nation that is Australia, homeless people are only homeless because they choose to be, so no sympathy is given.
>> Anonymous
I have never seen a homeless person, because the one homeless person around here is long gone (died years ago), but if I werw to take a picture of them, I would just take it then go up to them and ask if I can use it for whatever it is I would use it for. I would probably then give them some money because some of these people are on the street not because they wanted to be but because life screwed them over.
>> Anonymous
no homeless in Aus because they have a clean the streets division working for the cooperates keeping the image good for tourism.

Part of me wants to say that it is exploiting them, but another part of me doesn't. The only reason is because a small team of 4 (including myself) found images of homless kids and we got a group started in the college to build shelters in Syracuse.

Some kids admitted that if they didn't see the pictures, they never would have helped.

I said not a hell of a lot, I didn't mean nothing at all. You are right, they could get out of homelessness, but if they have been homeless for the majority of their live and don't have an education, they may not have proper people skills.
Also, do you really think an employer would hire them? Even if they looked the part for the job.

1. Not all homeless people drink themselves to oblivion, or even significantly at all. I've had the odd fortune to always attract homeless people, and most of them struggle very hard to manage. They're not working or doing whatever to pay their rent, buy nice clothes, and go for drinks at a trendy bar. They're working to survive on a day to day basis. They can't afford to spend their time getting hammered.

2. So what if they do drink? Their lives are miserable, and some of them use alcohol- for good or for ill, that's beside the point- to numb the pain. They can't, like the average first-worlder, park their ass in front of a television to drive their problems to temporary oblivion. They can sometimes spare a few dollars for some strong drink.

One guy I ran into and asked me for money outright said, "Could you give me some money for liquor?" and went on to tell how he had a tough time in Vietnam, psychologically and physically, how he had been shot through the cheek, showed me where it was, was totally open he was self-medicating with whiskey. Could you blame him? No, it's not healthy, but most people in his position would be doing the same thing with much less honesty.

3. The troll ITT is espousing views which lead to dead, soulless art. The genius of the arch-greats of every medium lies in their sensitivity to the human condition in all its expressions and dignified humanism: Shakespeare, Rembrandt, Cartier-Bresson, etc.

Any "art" someone with his mindset produces will have the depth and substance of a Rolex ad.

I see homeless people every fucking day on my way to work, because they swarm around the goddamn subway stops begging for change to buy crack and shitting on the sidewalk.

Honestly, I think the police ought to have the right to round them up, rough them up, and dump them at the edge of town with a warning that if they come back they're going to get the shit beat out of them.

The street homeless are all drug addicts and lazy fuckers who just don't want to better themselves. Why should I be expected to give them MY money that I worked hard for, just because they can't get their shit together well enough to stop blowing all their fucking money on crack and heroin?

masterpieces rarely stem from broken people. You have no empathy, are a probable sociopath (all ego) and it's doubtful you could understand what your camera is aimed at.

Liberal faggot who doesn't have to deal with the homeless on a regular basis.

It's real easy to think "OH THEY ARE THE DOWNTRODDEN SUCH POOR SOULS" until you have to deal with their inhuman filth and shittiness every fucking day of your life.

They're animals, and most of them are too fucking crazy or strung out to even interact rationally with other beings.
