Oh no, another "what camera should i buy to get into photography?" thread!

Not quite. Even though i'd like to get into photography i'm not looking to buy a camera for that purpose. I'd like to purchase a simple, point and shoot camera for $200 or less, mostly to take everyday pictures and the sort. While i'm aware that i won't get the same kind of pictures as with an expensive camera, i'd still like to find something that doesn't spit out blurry and over/under exposed pictures all the time.

I used to have a Polaroid i832, but was very displeased with it. Later the battery compartment broke, apparently a common problem with the model, and was not worth repairing. I've been looking around some ad and i found a Kodak m863 (picture related) for decent price. But i'm wondering, what does /p/ think about this camera? Would you suggest any other instead?

OP here. So film over digital? And yes, i can at least load film. Though i was under the impression most people nowdays prefer digital over film due to the long term cost?

My first instinct was to look at the Australian Canon and Nikon stores and browse their cheaper point-and-shoots.

There is a pretty big range available, and cameras like Canon's A590IS can take lens adapters, so if you like you could add a 1.5x telephoto or 2.2x super-telephoto some time later.

Also, although many people would rage about this, I'd go for a camera that can take AA NiMH batteries, simply because they're fucking EVERYWHERE, so if your two sets of rechargables runs out of juice while you're away from a power point and battery charger, just buy a couple more packs from any handy store and keep on snapping.

That, easier learning, etc.

Just pick up a Canon Powershot A650 IS, or any other Powershot A-series with manual controls, OP.

The few Sony's I looked at - finding out more information after my Dad bought himself a cheap PnS - all used proprietary Li-based batteries that could only be charged in their own charger. I wouldn't be surprised if all the Sony PnS cameras were proprietary in their batteries - seeing as Sony seems to have this thing with always coming up with their own shit and ignoring nearly everyone else.

>>241104
thats retarded. it really takes away a lot from a pns to have to charge your batteries, and im sure it adds a far amount to the cost.

>>241072

And you're making that general statement based on what?

I bought two add-on lenses for my S5 and although I'm not a pro, I can tell when a picture is sharp and clear, and neither of those lenses have given me any sort of trouble with degraded quality of pictures.

I also removed a good deal of odd lighting effects by simply using a lens adapter with a UV filter and a polarising filter on my camera instead of leaving the S5's lens "naked".

actually, many point and shoots these days use Li batteries. you people are funny because you're the opposite of what most people complain about. And its not just sony that makes their battery 'proprietary'. Any maker's Li battery will be. Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fuji, Sony, Pentax, Panasonic, etc, all have rechargable PnS cameras. Typically only the very bottom of the barrel type cameras will use AA

Maybe it's just the market where I live. Either way, a proprietary battery does kind of spoil the ability to always have spare batteries on hand.

The Samsung S860 is a great one. Cost me £60 ($120US). Batteries last ages unless your making vids, in which case the life span is shorter.

OP here.

I thought the same thing about the batteries. It's much more easier to go buy a pack than go recharge the one brought. And you don't have to tote around the charger either.

>>241067
A bit expensive from what i saw in Amazon, but i'll take that suggestion to look for a Powershot A-series with manual controls. That is one of the things i disliked about my previous camera, that it did weird things automatically and i couldn't change them.

>>241135
Seems like a reasonable choice price wise with what it does. Around the same price and it seems a bit more attractive than my first choice too.

>>241068
Didn't get that many prints out of my previous digital camera. Mostly because i didn't feel like printing them out unless someone asked me to.

>>241163
Which one, if you don't mind me asking? I'd really like to know the good and bad points so i don't end up buying a bad device.

This one is crap>>241135
lacks 2 manual controls lul.

But srsly frrlz, any Canon A-series would do. The cheapest one is fien.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1

10x optical zoom
Great battery life
Large screen

only downside is that it's a little big & the flash isn't so strong.

Pic related, it's an unaltered (besides cropping) photo I took on it yesterday.

In my opinion, I'd say go with the Pentax Optio E10 P&S camera.

I've used it for over a year now and I'm very pleased with it.

Any of the Canon SD series cameras are amazing. I had an SD 800 IS and its manual controls come in handy once you start using understanding it better.

For a simple point-and-shoot of decent quality, go with any of the Canon SD series.

I got the SD630 since the 3" lcd takes up almost the entire back of the camera, it doesn't have any extraneous bulges so it's got really flat sides and fits almost anywhere.
