Hey /p/...

My CRT is dying now (I can barely read this text as I type), so I'm looking for a monitor to replace it. I'm probably going to end up getting an LCD, so I'm wondering:

Any suggestions for brands / models to look for that would be good for digital darkroom / photo viewing? I know to look for a good contrast ratio, but any other tips?

(pic not related: taken of a waterfall up north, this last weekend)

Thanks

River and Waterfalls look so awesome shot @ low speeds.

As far as montiors go, I'm not sure. You might want to check on some of the photography sites. Also make sure that you calibrate it correctly or you're not doing yourself any good.

This is probably more suited for /g/, but I can give you a quick answer. I would either go for Samsung or Dell. If I remember correctly, I think someone said that Dell's LCDs are manufactured in the same place as Samsungs. I've used both. I'm not too sure if they are exactly the SAME, but they are made with quality. Samsung (and I guess Dell) LCDs have good refresh rates, and DPI.

Personally, I don't think that there will be a dramatic different in photo viewing from one LCDto another. But if you just get a good monitor, your viewing experience as a whole will just be heightened.

Thanks. I was thinking of getting a Dell anyway, I'll probably go ahead with that one.

I have an Asus laptop, and the LCD screen in that is absolutely stunning, so I might go with an Asus screen.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't CRTs have more dynamic range than LCDs?

Yes, thats why lots of professionals still use them.

OP here. I loved my current CRT to death when it was still working, it's a beautiful monitor. It's getting worse by the week now, so I need a replacement.

I'm going off to university next year, where I'll be in just for one term till I head for co-op, so I'd like another CRT but am sort of stuck with an LCD because of the size / weight considerations.

To answer your question, dell monitors are made by samsung. Therefore (dell=samsung)=awesome!

Look for something with a good response time and an optimum resolution that you're comfortable with. Response time is in ms and 9 is probably too high. Most people say response time is important for gaming only but in reality, I can tell a slow LCD doing almost anything.

go to geeks for cheap monitors

I'm in Canada, so shipping+currency from an American site may be less than ideal. I might get the Samsung 226BW if I can find one in stock here. Barring that, I'll likely order an asus screen from ncix.

Thanks, /p/!

Where do you live? NCIX rocks but I figured only BC residents would buy from there, Especially considering the No PST from alberta's stores.

Also, Sony Alpha? Ewww...

I live close to Niagara Falls, Ontario.

I've ordered from them before. Their shipping rates are great, sometimes better than what I'd pay shipping from here.
