Hey /p/,

I post here a fair but, put a few up, some get ripped apart, but most get some good feedback (apart from the obligatory hate :P)

The thing is... Am going into a photography degree in september... And this may sound HUGLY big headed, or egotistical but ill say it anyway :P

The post we see here almost everyday, from people studying photography (apart from heavyweather, am achaly quite a fan), in my opinion, suck....

There is always something lacking from there photos, maybe not technical (though there normaly is), its always a lack of passion, you can SEE they just took the photo to "pass", not to do well... not for love of the art....

Its just got me thinking, why am I studying this? Yes i need technical help, Yes i could use acess to contacts and studio's ect.... but at the price of been put in a group with people who do it for the "cool" factor.... have no pasion for it...

If it even worth studying?? Should i just do it the work way round, try my best to get a low end job n work up?

Well, if you really love photography and you want to make a career out of it, I'd do the course. Around 70% of the "professional" photographers here (Netherlands) do have degrees, and only got hired because they have them (most of them are shit photographers). Very rarely do they actually hire people because of an impressive portfolio. I wish you luck!

I just finished a Photography AA degree last Spring. The things I got out of it were: (1) a really nice portfolio; (2) great insight into professional photography and fine art photography from my instructors; (3) information on how to start working as a pro; (4) confidence to market myself as an assistant wedding photographer a few years back; (5) an AA to put down on my resume.

If your school has commercial photography classes, make sure you take those. But don't skimp out out black-and-white wetlab classes to work on some fine art first. Classes I wish I had taken was history of photography and photography artists.

If you're in the US, be sure to become a student member of ASMP. That opens doors fast.

And yes, am going to be studying "commercial photography" here in the UK, not diffrent class's like US, but assume its the same..

Thanks for the little bolster that its worth it :), cheers /p/, the lastest topic with that retard trying to pass of that shit as his own idea just got me raged :P

you either have the photography talent, or you don't. everything takes practice. Most of the stuff i've posted here is practice, i dont' tend to post my more pro stuff on here, since i'm looking for critiques when I do. If you love photography and want to do that for the rest of your life, then go for it! It won't be easy, but you'll be satisfied with it.

The thing is, if you post stuff that you know turned out really nice, it's kinda hard to get critique. Better to post stuff you aren't sure about, that pushes your abilities and is much more borderline quality in order to get useful critique. Most people on here are amateurs and very much in the learning process, and don't have a style hammered out yet, so it makes sense that quality will vary greatly.

It depends where you study it. Some universities or colleges get bad rep for their photography courses but on the other hand there are colleges with have a very good reputation for having great courses, great lecturers/tutors/teachers and great facilities which push you to your creative limit and really help you advance as a photographer.
There are two uni's in edinburgh that do photography courses, both the courses have the same curriculum but one is considered alot better than the other and the course has an amazing reputation.
Art colleges usually are the best place to study photography.

Lol wut? For the longest time he was griping about not having the money to replace some really slow computer that could barely run Photoshop. For all I know he's still using it.

I'm actually po' as hell. This summer is a fluke though since I've got a nice job and I'm living at home to save money. Once I go back to school I'll be a destitute asshole again, so I'm buying all the kit I can while it lasts.

My perceived identity is getting kind of odd.

Well, good thing you aren't planning to become an English major, or any major that requires correct spelling.
