Hey /p/,
I have a question for you guys.
I have a nice film camera (my digital POS camera died and I can't replace it) but I don't have a (good) way to get the film onto my PC.
So...
What kind of DEDICATED film scanner would you recommend?
Thanks!

here's one of my prints I managed to scan in. (shitty printer/fax/copier/scanner unit)

Are you scanning negatives or slides?

negatives. (I forgot to say that, didn't I?)
Black & white, and possibly color.

I've heard really good things about the Epson Perfection 4990 Photo. It's a flatbed, but from what I've heard, it scans better than a lot of dedicated 35mm scanners. And, as an added bonus, it'll scan medium format and large format up to 8x10, too.

I'm planning to get one next time I have $500 that's not already spoken for.

(I currently have a Canon LiDE 600f flatbed. It's shit. Don't get it. I wish I hadn't.)

Nikon LS-x000. Possibly from 4000 and up, if you have funds.

I've got a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 and I love it to death. It's got two attachments so I can scan both my slides and my negatives. If you've got the $$$, it works out great. Color levels stay pretty balanced, and you can change the DPI settings without much issue at all.

any others?

thanks all for your suggestions

i had a Nikon Coolscan IV ED, it was quite good, much better than any flatbed.
but i do use a HP 7400c for my prints or medium format scans.

Disregard this, I suck cock.

(I realized a few moments ago that I had just screwed up when I did the required calibration step. 17 rolls of film, all scanning poorly, and it didn't occur to me to try hitting the big "Calibrate" button. And the reason it failed the first time was because I was too lazy to stand up and take the strip of film out when it explicitly told me to before calibration.

I feel like a massive tool

Incidentally, the Canon Canoscan LiDE 600F is pretty nice. Although I wish I'd gotten the 8600F now since that'll do medium format for $30 more)

So you're saying that your Cannon LiDE 600F isn't as bas as previously indicated because you dicked up the calibration?

Any other scanners people use to get their film onto their PC? The limited ones listed here doesn't give me much to compare between.

I use an oldternet minolta dimage scan dual. I wouldn't suggest it, however, the later models are better and also cheap.
