So /p/,
I got a Yashica Electro 35 Rangefinder at a garage sale for $5.
Is this awesome? [Y/N]

Pic related, but googled - Too lazy to dig my camera out of it's box.

Is the auto-exposure mode working? If yes, then awesome.

just buy the one off the internet. they last for like, ever.

The idea of paying more for a battery then I paid for the camera infuriates the Jew inside me.

>>90620(I also have discovered how amusing it is to play with the aperture when you're looking through the lens.)

How is it amusing? It doesn't do anything.

Nevermind, I guess you could see it if you're on bulb and hold the shutter open.

Rangefinder. Since you're not looking through the taking lens, there's no reason for it to wait to stop down until you hit the button.

(Presumably he's either looking through the back with no film in it)

In that case you want to make an adapter out of some tin foil and some carbdoard to wrap around the battery. That or a spring. If the battery inside has leaked you will probably need to clean the lerminals with some white vinegar. Also there is a higher chance that the camera is fucked. Out of the 4 electros i bought with a battry leak only 1 works.

The leak wasn't bad - Only on the end by the cap. Didn't get any delicious battery mercury inside the camera, only had to tear the battery away from the cap (Christ, Battery acid is like a glue) and clean it up.
I'm no expert on Battery bursts, but it seemed to me like it was a relatively recent leak - Didn't look like the battery had been leaking for the last two decades, anyway.

Now, this talk of an adapter - What sort of batteries would I use with it? Sounds like back when I'd use balls of foil to use AAAs in my AA Walkman back in the day..

Well you can easily find a 4LR44 (also known as a 476a) battery which is equivelent to sticking together 4 lr44 buttons that you were refering to in your post. This provides 6v which suits the yashica fine, the .6v difference doesn't effect the exposure like it does in other older cameras. However keep an eye out for the silver oxide equivelent to the 4lr44 (i think its a px23?) because they will last you longer.

there are alot of resources on this topic on the web.

Cheers

A GTN for $5? Win. I've been trying to get one from e-bay for the past month, but the working ones cost at least $50 so I settled for a chrome GS.

Matt Denton has a neat trick for batteries: http://www.mattdentonphoto.com/cameras/yashica_gsn.html

I used a 4LR44 with a couple of coins to fill the gap for my Electro back when I still had one and it worked just fine.

What exactly is the difference between the different models anyway?
Just Fancy-pants black vs bare metal, and Old version vs new version?

G/GS/GSN vs. GT/GTN, just the color.

G/GT - Max asa rating is at 500, no hotshoe

GS - Max asa rating is at 1000, no hotshoe

GSN/GTN - Max asa rating at 1000, with hotshoe.

Very minor differences.
