Filters? Anonymous
As if there aren't enough wannabe photographers out there. I just bought my Rebet XT with the stock lens and am interested in buying a cheap wide angle lens since I'm more interested in landscape.

My question is - how essential are filters? And which ones? I recall using red/yellow contrast filters back in the days with non-digital; has those become obsolete with post-processing?
I'm not sure whether or not to buy a filter kit or which filters to buy. I also read that wide angle lenses + filers = vignetting effect.

Feel free to critique my poor work. I'm always looking to improve.

There are two schools of thought as far as UV filters go. Some keep one on at all times for lens protection. Others see no point in putting a filter on a nice lens when it will just degrade the image. I personally don't use UV filters unless I'm going to be in super harsh conditions. The only filter you really are going to want is a circular polarizer.

As far as getting a cheap wide angle lens... you already have one. The kit lens at 18mm is as wide as you're going to get without spending $450-500 on a 10-2xmm lens.

I put filter on to protect, get a sense on what Im shooting at... then take it off and shoot. Keeps my lenses clean, I mean why get it scratched and dirty if it doesn't have to, not to mention I don't want to accidentally scratch surface of the lens when having to clean it all the time.

people seems split on filters for protection, i personally dont use them but i dont have anything against them, most 'effect' filters have been replaced with photoshop, with the one major exception being a polarizer, which can be very handy depending on what you shoot

It is not that important when shooting digital since the art of filter aplication is pretty much dead unless you actually know something about analog photography which is much more challenging. With digital you just need a good polarizer and whatever you don´t know, you can fix in photoshop and call yourself a pro.

OP here. thanks for all the input. I'll definitely go pick up a polarizer after seeing what it can do.
