The thing is, once you want to purchase more lenses, you realize that the D40 limits you only to AF-S and HSM lenses, which not only cost a bunch more, but aren't that great in number. There's only a single prime from Sigma that autofocuses on the D40 (and that's the 30mm 1.4f at $400). Also, small viewfinder is small. I'm trying to get rid of my D40 but the bodies I want are out of my price range currently (30D, 40D, D80), so I'm stuck with what I have for the time being).
Honestly, OP, getting a D40 now would be a good idea but just realize that odds are that sooner than later, you'll probably be in my position trying to unload yours for something better.
