serious question time /p/,

what do you guys use for your flash?

see i usually shoot graduations and i've got 2 cameras. I've got a speedlite 420EX on one of them plus a light sphere. Now i'm going to be buying another flash unit for my second camera and I'm confused between the 430EX and the 580EX II. According to the canon website, the 430EX has a shorter recycle time(0.1 - 3.5s) than the 580EX(0.1 - 7s) and shoots more (430EX = 200 - 1400 while 580EX II = 100 - 700) per battery charge. But the 580EX is brighter and has more custom functions. So far the 420EX has proven reliable for my current projects. so anyone have experience with any of these two flashes? input is greatly appreciated.

also, what batteries do you guys use? I'm using Eneloop. charges for 10 hours but is worth every second.

*pic related, it's the canon 430EX*

I've been using the 430 for 2 years, but not for your purposes. Works well as filler light in the great outdoors.

uh, if you've already got the 430, get a 580 to control it off camera

580 is stronger

adjustable from 1/1 to 1/128 with 1/3 stop increments

head is adjustable full 180 both directions and downwards

can be a master

has a built in catchlight

has the elite control dial instead of buttons

weather sealed

pc sync

strobe mode

can override recycle time and fire at half power but i don't know if it's only the 580

I don't know if you read through but I have a 420 and i need another flash for another camera. They are to be used at the same time. Thank you for your time though.

Hmmm yeah, I also use it as a sort of fill flash. The lighting for the stage is enough. I wonder how the 430 handles indoors though.

ok. So the 580 is stronger and can fire at half power, sort of like a mini strobe. but I don't use it as a direct flash, I use it as sort of a fill flash. Does the extra power count?

uhhh The stage is lit from above and there are harsh shadows that i want to eliminate, direct flash is too harsh, so i use the flash through a Lightsphere or an ABBC facing up. Did i miss anything?

they're just really stupid questions

I use the 430 on my rebel. I don't like to shoot with direct flash, so I usually bounce it off the walls to create a hatchet lighting effect. Its pretty bright. I cant imagine needing any more flash than what you can get out of the 430, unless your shooting homo fashion photos on model mayhem.

if you're using any kind of modifier, it cuts down on light output

stronger flash wins
