so what actually differences do these filters make, and which ones do you use and why?

when I was buying my SLR they threw in a free filter into the dea so I asked for a UV one, as it would only be used to protect the lense, the didn't have any UV ones so they gave me a skylight instead, and I honestly can't the difference with it on or off. It says its suppose to block UV rays and some blue rays to make pictures look to cool.

Does /p/ buy a new filter everytime they get a lense, and does brand really matter?
Mine was the shops own brand (jessops)

You can get a free filter and ask for a UV one?
You're doing it terribly wrong...

it was a choice of UV, skylight or haze

Ah, ok.

I like Haze slightly better than Skylight, but honestly none of those 3 filters does very much.

I used to always shoot with a filter on the lens (GOTTA PROTECT MAH BABIES!!!) but it does actually reduce image sharpness, so unless you're shooting with ZOMG EXPENSIVEHUGE GLASS the small amount of protection isn't worth the loss in sharpness.
