I challenge you to give some advice rid of any E-penis elitist bullshit /p/

Instead of buying a cat or getting married, me and the misses are buying a digital camera (our first) together.

She would like a camera that's:
*cheap
*portrays decent colors and color depth
*point and shoot ease

I would like a camera that:
*Is robust (I was looking at that new 400kilo/waterdustproof tank which costs 400$...can't remember the brand...anybody have any idea?)
*Can be used to learn photography 101

You can't really learn photography with a point and shoot. To get a good learning camera with P+S settings you're looking at entry level DSLRs, which arguably aren't that cheap. We're talking Canon 400D, Nikon D40, that kind of thing. They're kinda robust, I guess.
>> Anonymous
>Can be used to learn photography 101

Could you elaborate on what you mean by this?

>>86955

All cameras these days, except for a few models (Leica M8, for instance) have full auto modes.
>> Anonymous
Elaboration:

I've never owned a digital camera. I would like to buy one, as does my gf. If I'm going to spend money on a camera anyway, I'd like to buy a decent one that I can use to do some art photography and photo journalism. If you want the elitist explanation: I'm a writer and I'd like to incorporate text and graphic media into one.

If that is too obvious a question to answer (get a 400d/d40 already), please give me some info on some good 200-300$ range pointandclick camera's for my gf. Thx guys!

Standard answer for p&s: any of the powershot a series.

>>86957
Yes, get a Rebel/D40/Pentax K100D/Olympus EVOLT-410 already. Go to a camera store, hold each of them, shoot a few shots, and see which one feels the best for you. They're all pretty equivalent.

As for your girlfriend, the other poster is right: Powershot A-series, but also look at Panasonic's and Fuji's line if she's looking for a top-end sort of point and shoot.

Says it runs on AA batteries. I don't like things that can't be charged. And I'm not about to buy a battery charger.

Any other candidates?
>> Anonymous
>>86961
AA battery chargers are cheap.
>> Anonymous
I think there was an Olympus model that is water/sand proof, but for the life of me I can't remember the model name.

Get any decent camera that allows Manual mode, that should get you some basic control of the whole picture taking process.
>> Anonymous
>>86964
Olympus has at least two water- and dustproof point-and-shoots (770SW and 790SW), but don't have manual controls and the image quality is typical of pocket cameras (read: it sucks).

Also, Olympus has two splashproof SLRs, but E-1 is old and clunky, and E-3 costs some $2000.

Canon Powershot A570IS for compact or SX100IS for a longer zoom.

>>86961
you want something that can be charged but wont buy a battery charger? what?
>> Anonymous
>>86961
AA battery chargers are the EXACT SAME as the lithium ion battery chargers, but you won't have to pay $50 if you lose your battery or want a spare.
>> Anonymous
>>86983
It charges with a cable running up to the camera, like cellphones do nowadays.
>> Anonymous
>>86986
Pretty much all digital cameras make you take the battery out to charge them...
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>86988
Alpha 100 has onboard charging so NOU
>> Anonymous
Ok I'll buy a battery charger :) That's not the main issue anyway.

I've given it some thought and the entry level SLR's are too expensive for our purposes. So I will settle for a P&S camera.

So is the CANON PowerShot A720 the way to go???
Or are there any alternatives?
>> Anonymous
>>87025
A720 is ok, I guess.
>> Anonymous
EOS 1D series.

If there's 2 of you buying it, you should be able to afford it no problem.

For a mid range something above starter something below DSLR I would reccomend 3 cameras:

Fuji 6000 (6500 for eurofags)
Looks like an SLR, ease of use, great zoom and can go between point and click and more advanced modes (like all 3 I guess), its the cheapest of the lot and quite a good deal if you are just getting started.

Canon S3is
The older brother of the S5is - a decent camera with good features, battery life and quality. The main plus of this camera is the optical image stabilization - something you don't get on the fuji.
The drawbacks are the price, not being able to " officially" shoot in RAW (you can get a unoffical hack for that) and lack of hotshoe for flash.

Canon S5is
The younger brother of the 2 canons - about $100 + more expensive. It's got a larger lcd screen, 2more mp in resolution and a flash hotshoe if you decide to expand.
Drawbacks are the price, battery life (less than on S3is) and some argue the picture quality.

I don't personally recommend the S5is - better go for a cheaper camera and then get an SLR if you want more options later on.

I learned photography with a PowerShot A95.

Of course, the argument can certainly be made that I suck.
>> ????? !wAHA/GeRU.
I also say Powershot A series. I learned from using my A70 and my Fuji S602.
>> Anonymous
>>86955

I say you can't learn photography on a P+S because if you don't control aperture, ISO, shutter, focus etc, then all you're going to learn is maybe composure.

If you -really- want to learn, go buy an old fully manual film SLR and load it with slides.

>>87114
a lot of point and shoots let you change all that. they just arent easily accessible, but they can.
>> Anonymous
>>86999
I didn't say EVERY SINGLE digicam, slick, just the vast majority of them.

>>87085

If I'm shelling out 500$ already, aren't I better off with the 400D instead of that expensive powershot?
>> Anonymous
>>87249
yea pretty much, if u look around you could even find a 350d for pretty cheap. they are pretty good cameras if ur trying to get into photography. a lot better than any p+s you could find for the same price.
>> Anonymous
If you want weather sealing then you will have to pay the top dollars for it. If you want a good camera then you can get a cheap Nikon or Canon (you can get good prices for older models too sometimes and they are still good) and it will be able to do pretty much all you want if you feed it lenses and learn how to work it. If the two of you decide to keep going with it, that collection of lenses will be good for the next upgrade in bodies.

The only problem is that the more you want, the more the price goes up. Might be worth considering a compact or "bridge camera".
>> Anonyfag of Borneo !bHymOqU5YY
I'm agreeing with the hivemind, the Powershot A series is a good tool for learning.
>> Anonymous
>>87251
How does the 350D compare to the 400D? Is the 400d really worth the extra few hundred?
>> Anonymous
ON A SIDE NOTE

Which lens should I get with the Eos400d?
>> Anonymous
>>87282
No, the 400D is not much of an improvement.
Unless you absolutely must have one of the following:
- 10MP instead of 8MP (relevant only if you print posters)
- 2.5" LCD (but that comes at the expense of the monochrome auxiliary LCD!)
- Anti-dust system (which doesn't actually work lol)

You forgot:
- Full color histogram option in playback (useful for checking to see if one of your colors has blown out, which the XT/350D's B&W histogram won't tell you)
- Easier, faster controls. You don't have to separately confirm each setting change on the XTi/400D, you just half-press the shutter and you're back in shooting mode with your new setting. This alone is worth the extra money for me
- Larger buffer. You can shoot 10 RAW frames at the full 3fps instead of just four, and you really only have to worry about filling the buffer in JPEG if you just flat out hold down the shutter.
- 9point AF instead of 7point. I normally just keep the focus point on the center and do the focus/reframe method, but there are some times when it really does pay to use a different AF point, and when that happens, it's really nice to have those corner points.

The bigger LCD is quite a good tradeoff for the lack of a little camera-settings LCD, if you ask me. The big crisp LCD is easier to read than the little ones, and its feature where it turns off when you bring it to your face is really nice (it also means that the camera's not wasting power on the LCD when it's resting against your chest or sitting in your camera bag). But note that I've never actually used a digital SLR other than my XTi, so it's possible I'm just not enlightened.
>> Anonymous !MjcMqTX/iM
Canon Powershot A630/640. I'd go for the 630 since it's a lot cheaper. 610/620 are good as well, and cost a bit less as well.
full manual control, as good to learn photography on as a entry level dSLR.
It'll take you years to learn composition and aperture / shutter speeds etcetera anyhow, so even though dSLRs are pretty sweet, it's quite an overload of things to learn at the same time, if you ask me.

I have two more questions:

1. Do you have to look through the lens or can you take pictures by looking at the LCD?

2. Does it record video with sound???

ASWERS PLOX
>> Anonymous
>>87342TWO QUESTIONS ABOVE

And I'm talking about the 400D
>> Anonymous
>>87343
1. With a few exceptions, up until the most recent generation of SLRs, the viewfinder was the only option. The 400D is not one of those.

2. No, it won't do video at all. Some DSLRs do have a microphone in them to let the photographer record audio shooting notes, but I don't think the 400D is one of them.
>> Anonymous
>>87342
You look through the viewfinder.

It does not do sound or video.

Go fuck yourself you wannabe photojournalist. If you put the thing on the ground or in an awkward position the LCD screen might come in handy. Same thing with taking pictures over a crowd. Or taking pictures from that APO 300-800 F5.6 EX DG HSM up your faggot ass...
>> Anonymous
>>87342
1. You look through the viewfinder. If you want live picture on the LCD, get the 40D or something from Olympus or Panasonic. However, the autofocus in live view mode is quite awkward on all those.

2. No DSLR records video, at least for now. Video quality on photo cameras sucks anyway, why bother.
>> Anonymous
>>87457
Basic mechanics of ANY SLR: The image you see through the viewfinder is what will be exposed onto the film, which is why the viewfinder blacks out when you press the shutter. No SLR will, or has EVER shown the image of what it's pointed at before you take a shot.

My initial response of "kill yourself" still stands, you touchy prick
