Sup, /p/?

I am soon going to be in the market for a new camera. Right now I have a shitty, old as hell, 2.0 megapixel Fuji Finepix 2650 (picture related).

I need something relatively inexpensive (<$200), but also decent. I do take what you might refer to as artsy photographs, but I'm not enough into it to pay $500+ for a DSLR. In other words, I'm not just dicking around and taking pictures of my friends, I need something that will be able to take nice pictures. (I realize that "nice" is very subjective.)

So what do you recommend?

so ya would want something that like fits in your pocket right?
>> Shralla
Eh, not necessarily. I don't want a crappy little point and shoot that's made specifically for people who just walk around with it in their pocket and pop it out every once and a while to take a picture of their friend and his wife, if that's what you're asking. Size is fairly inconsequential (unless there's an impact on performance.)

Go for the Canon Powershot series. They have a variety of models that range in prices. Of course the newer models have more MP and new features like adjustable angle on LCD screen, but all have quality lenses. These are less compact than the SD series which are more sleek in design, which you said you wanted to avoid. I'm probably going to guess you can get an A520 right now + some accessories like bag, batteries and SD card for less than $200 USD.

he didn't say avoid, he just said that small size is something he wasn't specifically looking for. he just doesn't want a small camera if it sacrifices quality for the size for the people who want to just take random snapshots easily.

If you're willing to go up to just over $300 (it lists for much higher, but almost everywhere on the interbutt sells it new for just over $300) the Canon S3IS is perfect for what you're talking about. It has full manual mode and the two priorities, manual focus and white balance, and so on. It's the nearest thing to an SLR sold that is not a $4,795 Leica M8.

It does not have interchangable lenses; it does have one lens that works as a wide-angle, telephoto, or macro. It has 12x zoom.
It does have less ISO speed options than an SLR.
It does not shoot RAW.

All of those things are important for professionals, but for what you're looking for, it'll work just fine, without being Lecia expensive or XBox huge.

That sounds really fucking nice. Manual focus and 12X zoom makes me want to fap. Unfortunately, it's a little expensive for my abilities. Alas, I'm a poor college student, so I'm really working on a budget.

What does everyone else think of>>39850's suggestion about the Powershot series?

i have a powershot A630 and i think its a good deal for the price. theres a good bit of noise at more than ISO200, though, but its a really easy to use camera and i like the feel of it for a compact. plus, swivel lcd is win for the times you dont want to cramp up your neck getting weird angle shots.
