Halp /p/! I went to dinner with my mom tonight and she gave me my christmas present early-- a Nikon D80. I just spent half an hour hissing at it, and it doesn't seem to care. What do I do now?

Email it to me.

when did we come back on line? WOOT WOOT

You have to get the old SLR out... otherwise the D80 won't do shit. It's temperamental like that.

Otherwise enjoy your camera, it's good. Though you'll gonna be annoyed with the smaller viewfinder and crop factor.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101430

what do you mean get the old SLR out ?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>101431

oh sorry, i meant your film gear, didn't mean to make it some spiritually existentialist movement where by your D80 got in touch with it's celluloid side :D
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101433

Ohhhh! there's no way in hell i'm going completely digital, that won't be an issue :)
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
Wow, that's awesome. Just start getting to know it, huh?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101438

it doesn't come with a memory card :P
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>101440
Heh, that's funny. I take it your mom didn't realize that?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101441

Doesn't matter. i'll pick one up tomorrow. *shrugs* i got an extra lens. considering how much it was.. this works
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>101443
Yeah, absolutely. My amusement is at the fact that they don't come with cards, I can see why but it strikes me as weird. And slightly annoying.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>101443

what lens did you get with it?

and it's better coming with no memory card than the 16mb card they use to come with
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>101445
Yeah, no kidding. Those things are pointless.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101445

my roomie gave me an extra one of his (16MB) so i can play around until i get a bigger one. it came with a 18-135
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>101448

hehe i'd give you my 16mb too, i think it holds like 3 raw shots... ha!

the 18-135 eh? sell it and try and get a 18-70mm, much better for digital. Or just another lens altogether.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>101448
The nice thing is, all your lenses should work on it, and they'll reach a bit farther, should give you something else to play with.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101452

just an extra body for events, etc. Film will still be my main, but i'll go out and play with it.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>101454

yeah experiment, use it as a tester for film shots.

Woot!
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101459

heh I can use it for some of the model events, where I can go take pictures of models i wasn't really there for, etc. It'll work as a pretty good filler

Noooo

Don't go over to the dark side

Noooooo
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>101460

exactly!... just make sure you don't become reckless... i tend to shoot 200 frames for one single shot these days... even if it meant that i got what i wanted in the first 4 or 5.... HA!
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101461

trust me, i'm not. I'll be spending plenty of $$$ on film
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>101462
Dude, that's insane. That seems like it would get in the way.
As long as she avoids chimping too much, should be fine...
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM

i did that yesterday actually. It's just that after i get what i wanted, i just play around... sometimes i do get somethig i wasn't aiming for but usually it's just more stuff to delete haha.

This shot was a bit of a lucky one just tried different things in front of the camera... the orignal was me jumping into the puddle... what i didn't realise was that where i jumped was actually WAIST DEEP... so i slipped and fell in completely... i've got that one too... i'll show it when i feel like humilating myself

>What do I do now?
Go out, take 500 shots of something, enjoy the fact that you just saved about $100 in film and processing costs.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>101464
Also: Don't tell her to avoid chimping. The ability to chimp is one of the greatest things about digital SLRs. You can see if you've fucked up immediately rather than waiting for development and processing.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>101526
Oh I agree it has it's uses, and will serve her well in a work setting as she plans to use it, but it's a really bad habit to get over reliant on it. And she shoots off of almost pure instinct normally, I have a feeling that checking every other shot would be very detrimental.
Believe me, I chimp like a bitch, I'm trying to wean myself off a bit, so I only check when I feel it's necessary, like at night.
>>101522
I agree. Liska, do what you do best and shoot with it. Break it in, hard.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>101595
My main problem is that I try to chimp when I'm shooting film. Then I feel like a moron because I'm looking at the black plastic back of my film SLR.
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>101526
Yeah, I'm happy that I did not try to chimp my ae-1 once yesterday. Not even a twitch, and the first time I've used film in a couple years. Just felt natural.

Sprinkle it with holy water while reading Exodus from the King James Version of the bible. That should send the succubus back to hell.

Actually, grats.

>>101454

You say that now but in ten yeas will stubble on this old slr covered in dust and one sentence will cross your mind as you realized how loyal that device was...

"I waited for you Liska..."

Just kidding. Enjoy your gift.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
I took it out and shot 525 photos of a beautiful woman :) Should get a couple useable ones.

For model photography, I think it's easier. So i can keep the film for the more formal, fancier stuff, and if it's a fun photoshoot, just bring out the digital.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>101728

And so begins your decent into the dark side...
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101730

not really; once i get the $$$$ flow going again, i'll switch back to film.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM

bwahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha...

that was meant to be an evil laugh

I'm sure the beautiful woman helped the experience. :D

That convenience is the main reason to use digital. Quality may be exactly the same, but 500 shots later and at no cost to you, it seems a lot smarter (and more practical) to stick with digital.

I started with a DSLR, and then picked up a film SLR, (for Velvia 50) And after putting around 10 rolls through that camera, I have to say its not worth it to me. The quality is sometimes marginally better (I do landscapes mostly), but most of the time Its equal or even worse (motion blur) Than 200 or 100 ISO of my DSLR's.

IF I could afford a D3 now, I would safely say that would probably kill of any advantage I see in 35mm film, as it has the same sensor size, and all the advantages that come with it.
Large format film is a different story, but its only a matter of time before the Mamiya Digitals and whatnot become viable economically..
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101736

for anything other than the model photography, and even certain shoots, the film is worth it to me. VERY much so. But if i'm bumming around, it isn't a serious job and i don't plan on submitting the photos for publication, digital will do.

>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>101736

Would you get the D3 though? I'm waiting for the next FX camera. IT just seems the D3 is much mor catered towards the Potojournalist.. and it's fuckin massive too...

I'm gonna wait a while and get their camera more suited for landscape work... lower base ISO, perhaps more megapixels and less bulky.

it's killing me actually, because i really do want to get the D300 NOW... god i want it now... but i'm gonna wait a little while longer. Since the D3 and D300 will always be there.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>101761

yup
>> Vincent
>>101763
If I could afford it I would, But... since I can't. I'll wait till they release another 1.0x crop body for under $3000.
I did just get a D200 like 4 months ago, so I'm not in dire need of an upgrade.

The Huge factor is a bit of a negative though, I prefer indoor club / event photography when i'm not shooting sports, So that camera might actually limit where I can get it in.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>101766

yeah good luck trying to get that xbox huge camera through the front doors.

I don't think i've ever been so tempted as to switch to Canon.. the 5D is damn well priced right now...But i do prefer Nikon's lens selection and i've got way too much accessories anyway.

Just hoping Nikon hurries the hell up.
