Proprietary? 99% of HDD recorders use MPEG2 or MPEG4, which definitely are not proprietary.
Capturing from tape in Final Cut though, jesus man, you've obviously never had to do it. Long story short, shit sux man, honestly. Ive been frustrated far too many times with that fucking process, mostly the fact that capture is in REAL TIME, so if you've got a 90minute tape, and you want all 90 minutes, its going to take NINETY MINUTES to capture. I cry myself to sleep at night thinking about how many shots ive lost to Final Cut chucking a shit over inconsistant timecodes from different recordings on the one tape.
HDD recorder = drag and drop, and boom, its ready to go. Maybe let FC convert to Apple Intermediate Codec if you're doing a lot of 1080p work with h264, just for the speed of rendering, but generally its far fucking easier to use a HDD camera.
