sup /p/

just got my first job as a freelance photographer for the campus newspaper.

First thing i'm doing is a women's volleyball game in a gym.

Since the newspaper doesn't particuarly care about noise (the loaner cameras they have in the office are G9s), i fully plan on cranking the ISO up to 800 or 1600, cranking the aperature open, and going nuts with my consumer 70-300 4.5-5.6.

any tips for not looking like a jackass and taking good pictures?

picture related.

A monopod is a big help. Don't get so absorbed in shooting that you end up in the way, try to pay attention to your surroundings and position yourself unobtrusively.

a monopod; completly forgot about that one, and, honestly, i've never used one. they do have one i can use though.

Don't worry about looking like a jackass and move with confidence. Most people understand that photographers need to be around and be relatively close the action and will be patient with you. Don't be afraid to go to where you need to go to get the shots you need and want. That being said, acting with the idea of a mutual courtesy will benefit both the audience and you. IE don't shove people out of the way, try not to ruin that soccer mom's shot, and avoid standing directly in front of people blocking all of their view. In regard to that last one, low shots tend to work well in sports, like shots taken at their waist level.

Ignore this.
>>250113
Do this.

Get as close as you can before people start telling you to back off, then get a little closer.

If you trade smiles with the official, they just might let you stand on the bench facing the net where the spikes / blocks occur...

Youre likely using the sigma 70-300, which I also use..
I usually worked with 1/200 shutterspeed and f6 at the 100mm end.. using AI Servo with the flash throwing all the light forward to help focus and freeze the shots.. like this

If the place is indoors and the lights are bad try to borrow a speedlite and use that.

Granted that wasnt the best shot i took in the place, but you get the idea.

Get an 85mm f1.8 (assuming you're using a Canon body). Don't use a flash unless you absolutely have to, if you do diffuse it or bounce it.

>>250221

Prime example of what you don't want (sorry)... the players are out of focus, it looks under exposed, harsh shadows due to the flash

/Just noticed you have a Sony A100, facepalm. Might want to look at their 50mm f1.4.

I was supposed to shoot either a volleyball or soccer game today but forgot my lenses at home.
When I've gone to practice sessions I've found that the kit (D40) lens was sufficient to frame the action but I'm not sure how well it'll go down in real usage. Our school' gym was bright enough that I can get away with 1/200 shutter at ISO 400, flash is discouraged.
For soccer I have to use my 55-200, monopod if the game is in the evening at the same time as having two others taking with an 18-55 3.5-5.6 and someone running around doing closeups with a 50mm f/1.4. The coach specified these but I don't know how well it'll work. I haven't been in a situation where I've been able to try to shoot soccer matches yet, but no matter how much the shots suck i still get paid.
Last year there was just a girl with a bridge camera and and another guy with a Fuji body with a 28-300.

Get a floor location and use a prime, OP. Telephotos are for people who have no means of getting close. Being part of a campus paper should give you access.
>> else !L6xabslN96
so i'm applying for a photography position at the campus newspaper(varsity). i obviously have to get through the interview. i have like, no experience professionally and hardly any on my own.

what can i expect? what should i prepare?

soz for hijacking thread, seemed more appropriate than making a new one.

Id say portraits, group shots, and action shots.
the less cliche the better ;)
>> Anonywoo
in other news.. i fricken hate the gym ive been working on...
Its got too many horizontal and vertical lines in the wall.. makes the AF go bonkers and focus on that instead of the action im shooting :( repositioning helps, but it just lessens the problem rather than eliminates it entirely

don't have a prime. just the sony kit (f3.5 at 18mm, lulz) and the minolta 70-300 (5.6 on the long end lolol)

I'd kill for either the zeiss 135/1.8 or 300/2.8

any rich people want to be nice?

this one is a very clear shot, but it's still a bit boring as a portrait.

Enjoy your blur, try going to a photo store that lends out glass even though most stores will probally not have lenses for sony/minolta since most sports photographers shoot canon/nikon

Go find an old 70-200/2.8 HS, they're a bit expensive (700gbp~) but its the best telephoto you can get for under a k for the mount.

Ive seen lots of nice shots from the beercan too, so you may want to pick that up, though its not any faster.
>> Foca !ZPmgSZGczM
>>250109

don't take too many "artsy" photos. they're nice, but they usually distract the photographer from what he really should be capturing (e.g. the action). if you can combine both, great! but don't completely set your mind to it.

Just got home.
Shot at a soccer game today. Horrible fucking weather, had to stand out in the rain with a plastic bag over my camera, rubber band over the front element ring.
Very dim lighting combined with fast movement made me have to shoot at ISO 800 most of the time which is complete fail on the D40. Detail is chucked to fuck because of light fall off and noise removal.
Meh. First paid job.
