XTi upgrade Anonymous
Hi /p/

I've got a quick question. So right now I currently have the XTi with the kit lens and the 240-70L lens as well that I bought this past december. However, I am considering upgrading the body to either a 40D or a 5D. What do you guys recommend? I've been reading very good reviews on the nikon d300 and it appears to be better than the 40D.. however given that I already a pretty nice lens for the canon I may just stick with a canon body.

Typo: I meant 24-70L lens

I'd recommend sticking with your current camera and taking some pictures actually worth two shits. Faggot.

Spend the money on glass instead. Get a new body when yours dies.

/agree

lenses can make all the difference.

or bail the fuck out of canon and go nikon ;)

The body you shoot with doesn't really make much difference...it's the lenses that make the picture.

Keep the XTi, because the only upgrade that will make a real difference is to the 5D. Course then you'll only have one lens, which is just dumb. Basically:
upgrading to the 40D is pointless because you will have effectively the same shot from a 40D and an XTi
upgrading to the 5D is even more stupid cause you only have one lens that works on it
upgrading to the D300 is stupidest of all, cause you have no lenses that will work on it.

Spend the money on new glass instead. Get a fast 30mm or even 50mm prime.

because having a lens spanning 24-70 is absolutely useless

lol

actually an F/4 is pretty useless in many situations, it's not particularly sharp for an L lens, and it's too short for anything but candid portraits at the long end

go die

oh and also I didn't say it was useless, just stupid. And I forgot that that lens doesn't do macro.

...

Are you a fucking troll?

The 24-70 is 2.8. It's pretty damn sharp wide open. For a single general purpose lens, it's way the fuck up there, along with the 24-105.

I'm not even going to bother with the macro comment.

The reason _I_ said that upgrading to the 5D was dumb was because that 2-2.5k is better spent on more lenses. The 24-70 is a great lens but it doesn't cover everything; were I in his situation I'd go for the 10-22 and a good macro or medium tele and increase what I could do with the XTI, rather than upgrading to a new body and being stuck with the one range of focal lengths. If you're fine with that and/or can afford more lenses as well as a body, then by all means get the 5D.

Don't get the D300 though, that's just dumb.

How do you feel about mounting the 24-70mm f/2.8L on the XTi? I bought this lens just a month or two ago and was cautioned to never have the lens on the body unsupported. The XTi being even smaller and appearing more fragile just makes me curious.

The 400D is made of plastic but the chassis and mount is steel. It's not going to break unless you're being an idiot.

OBVIOUSLY it's not a smart thing to have the lens unsupported but if your tripod head is strong enough not to move I don't think the 24-70 will cause much stress to your camera body. I don't think they make tripod rings for the 24-70.

This pic gets posted all the time on DPR.

Is that an original Rebel?

Counterpoint: The 5D and 40D are both significantly better to shoot with for most people. Since the OP already has a pretty good lens, he might want to rent/borrow a 5D and a 40D and shoot with them a little and see if they work any better for him. And if they do, weigh that against other lens possibilities.

If he does wind up with the 5D, he doesn't lose any coverage by not being able to use the kit lens; in fact, he gains it. 18mm on a crop sensor is a narrower field of view than 24mm on a 36x24mm sensor. He would, of course, lose at the telephoto end if he sells the XTi. Considerations.

And the "one lens is extremely stupid" argument is silly; for years, most people only had a 50mm . I think he may have changed at some point, but for most of his career, Cartier-Bresson used a 50mm Elmar with a maximum aperture of... gasp... f/3.5.

Sorry for any typos... my computer is being screwy and the text got messed up at one point. I think I corrected them all, though.

kit lense on the XTi is a crop lense no? Wont be able to use it on the 5D without MASSIVE (1.5 crop) vignetting.

Not to mention that any EF-S lens in a full-frame body runs the risk of thrashing your sensor because it projects too deep into the body.

Mirror, not sensor. But yes, don't try to wedge an EF-S into an EF mount.

Butterfly proves again he doesn't know shit.

yeah reading, its 4am...

Nice of you to point it out to the other 2 as well.
>> Anonymous
Why would I point it out to the other 2?

They know you can't use EF-S lenses on full frame bodies. You don't.
>> Anonymous
I have no suggestions as to whether or not you should sell, but I think it's worthwhile to point out that since L lenses hold their value extremely well you could most likely sell your 24-70L and buy the Nikon equivalent without losing much if any money.

It won't fit. There's a flange to prevent that specifically. If you force it in, something is going to crack off even before you shatter the mirror.

>>130295
True, lots of photographers have only used one lens. I definitely find that I use my 55/1.8 and 105/2.8 more than any of the other lenses I have, and for all practical purposes those two and a 35 or 28mm are plenty for 95% of the shooting I do.

That said, why have an SLR with only one lens? They make them interchangeable for a reason...I still maintain that it's better to spend money on lenses than on a body until you have a really good reason to upgrade (eg. "all my lenses are for 35mm format" or "I miss shots because the drive is so slow")

>(eg. "all my lenses are for 35mm format" or "I miss shots because the drive is so slow")

I'm sure this one happens a lot: "Spending more money for more expensive gear will make me a better photographer!"
