It can be very rewarding for those who are passionate about the art of photography. If not so passionate, most likely not so rewarding.

My stats might be out of date but as far as I know the median salary is around $50,000. However, more than half of photographers are freelance. Opportunities include photojournalism, portraiture, event photography, commercial and product photography, selling images to commercial image libraries, etc. Some people who have science backgrounds can also get into medical, forensic, and other specialized types of photography.

Unfortunately, Freelance is really the only way to go unless you're lucky enough to get a regular salary job. Trust me, I graduated with a Bachelors (hons) in Photography and haven't found a damn thing relating to photography bar portrait studios and wedding photography. I blame it on the advent of Digital tech. All the little applications for photographers such as taking shots of houses for real estate agencies are now done by those people working there. Not much skill is needed for a photo that will be printed 40mmx30mm in a newspaper... So those who worked in those jobs now move onto other jobs, flooding the market.

If you get one, love it!

you blame digital? right ok because its IMPOSSIBLE to wrangle of shots of houses on 35mm and get thim printed in 20 mins.

lol, get real.

A lot of ppl mistake the fact that they own a camera or being a photographer. Millions of ppl can take nice pictures, look at flickr or any other image dump on the net. There are many, many highly competent photographers that will never work. Understanding how to use cameras isnt enough.

The only hope at the moment is for you to be very creative and actually put some amount of effort into the content of the image. There has to be a difference that divides your practice from the rest. Its sad to say but 99.9% of whats posted here is simple OH I LIKE THE LOOK OF THAT ITS WILL MAKE A GREAT PICTURE...etc. Ive only ever seen one photo on here where the photographer made some effort to make something deeper than the frame of the picture.

I'm about to graduate in my computer-related bachelor degree and want to pick up photography fulltime, sooner or later. don't know yet if I'll go study as free student.

as said, technically I know perfectly what I'm doing, but I'm still hunting for better images all the time. not easy. lately I've been very active and met some pro people, I know it's not easy but I want to give it a try. if I suck more then I apparently thought, I can fall back on my bachelor degree so its awwright.

mmmm, got the contact card of somebody I met teaching PJ in the USA, should send that guy some photos to know what he thinks.

Did you bother to talk to professional photographers before you decided to go to college to be one? That and youth sports are the bread and butter of everyday working photographers.
The number that can live off of things they would actually want to do alone are very few.
