What od you guys think of the canon elph SD1100?

I'm thinking of getting it as a camera I can always keep in my pocket, but are there better options out there?

So, what you be thinkin' /p/eople?
>> Anonymous
if you want a pocketable one, look for a compact sony that has manual functions. If you want a more useful camera, although it wont be as compact as a sony, look at a canon A series.

Manual functions would be like shutter speed or manual focus or ?

Sorry, I is newbz!

Also, I know this tihng only has 3x optical zoom, but how much could i get wigh digital zoom without making a 4x6 of it distorted?

I'm asking, because my current camera is fucked after any digital zoom.

I'm talking about stuff like aperture adjustment as well as shutter speed control.

About digital zoom, no digital zoom is ever any good. All it does is crop out the center of the image and increase the size, without increasing detail. It's never a replacement for real optical zoom and it's nothing you cant do on photoshop or even mspaint for that matter. Never care about digital zoom.

Elaborating on what I said earlier, some sony compacts have a manual mode that lets you control both aperture and shutter speed, but it doesnt have Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority (Tv) modes. For greater control, A series are king at the low end.

Additionally, dont consider a single image enough justification to pick one camera or another. If it's good, it doesnt mean the camera will make you take good pictures. If it's bad and it has obviously ugly qualities such as stupid amounts of noise, well, it could give an idea of how bad a camera can get.

In any case, try going to a store and handling/fiddling around with both cameras (or equivalents in their brands) if you can, and pick the one you like controlling the best.

I saw another thread and said fuck the super portability, I'm gonna go with a a-series

The one i'm looking at is only $149 on amazon, the Canon PowerShot A590IS 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

I'm only kinda maybe worried about the zoom, is 4x zoom enough? I have a camera that is 2x right now, and it's not that great, so how much better could a 4x zoom be?

tl;dr: anyone have example of a regular vs 4x zoom picture?
>> Anonymous
>>179894
4x optical zoom is better than a nikon coolpix with only 3x. Larger zoom capacity is always more convenient. If you're essentially upgrading from 2x to 4x, by all means do it.
>> Anonymous
>>179894

2x, 4x, 10x, 18x doesn't mean shit

I could make a lens that goes from 1mm to 10mm and call it 10x.

The A590 is 35-140mm which is respectable.
>> Anonymous
>>179898
The SX100 has 10x zoom and it's $210

Do you have experience with that camera?
>> Anonymous
>>179894
Zoom doesn't matter. You could have a 4x zoom that goes from 40mm equivalent to 160mm equivalent, in which case it's good on the tele end but not so good on the wide, or one that went to 30mm equivalent aand 120mm equivalent, which is a good balance. And a 35-70mm equivalent 2x zoom is nothing to sniff at. It's a little short on the tele end, but it's enough for portraits, which is the main thing you use teles of that length for.

>some sony compacts have a manual mode that lets you control both aperture and shutter speed, but it doesnt have Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority

Why would you need aperture priority or shutter priority if it has manual?
>> Anonymous
jesus christ, why are there so many cameras in the range i'm looking for?!

not only that, but then the same company will make 10 cameras that are only like $10 different

itt: i'm fucking confused

I just want a mother fucking camera to take pictures with, mostly of people and funny things, but sometimes at events! Why the fuck isn't there just one standard camera everyone is just like lol, get!

OH FUCK THIS, I'LL JUST GET THE TOP RATED ON CNET.

>Why would you need aperture priority or shutter priority if it has manual?

Doesnt completely apply in pocket cams, but for the same reason I like having aperture priority and shutter priority. Set the aperture or speed for the desired effect, the approximate EV+-, and let the camera take care of the other value for you. Set a low aperture for minimum dof, and shoot away while the camera takes care of the speed for you. Set the speed and the camera will help you. It's about comfort and what youre trying to do.

Let me tell you though, moving values around in a sony's manual mode is fucking slow and a pain in the ass.

>>179950
Spec wise it is, but in reality it's big and heavy and costs as much as an entry level DSLR.
>> Anonymous
>>179950
no, many think it is too close in price to a dSLR. But it probably is the best not considering the money. At least in the Canon line.
>> Anonymous
>>179910
Because it's the most popular price range? Go to a fucking camera store and fucking try them.

something in the powershot line then?

There are a DOZEN cameras in the powershot line. Get A-series if you want manual, get SD-series if you want slim. GO TO A STORE AND TRY THEM.

It's not big or heavy. Maybe compared to the SD1100 but not to an SLR.

>>179965
No shit it's smaller than a DSLR, but it's fucking enormous for a non-superultramegazoom P&S.
>> Anonymous
>>179966
I think it is rangefinder size, which is still pocketable and about the same size as an A650. Try one out at the store.

I have an SD850IS that I put CHDK firmwares on, so I can shoot RAW (still trying to figure it out though, DPP and Lightroom beta didn't import the RAW images right away, I had to convert them to DNG...)

Might want to look into something that'll do that.

>>179971
Pocketable if you like carrying around a fucking brick. It's not something that you can pocket comfortably for any length of time and certainly not in nicer slacks.

Either a sport coat or Dinner jacket should be within reach if your wearing slacks
>> Anonymous
>>180056
If you can fit your a hand into the pocket, you can fit the camera in question.

Also, you have a very high standard for comfort if you think something the size of the G9 is uncomfortable.
>> Anonymous
>>180071
How about just casual khaki slacks? Should I really be wearing a sport coat with those?

>>180079
My hand is just a bit thinner and lighter than a G9, and I must be getting trolled because it's not unreasonable to dislike pocketing a camera that's boxier, thicker, and heavier than a DS Hueg all the time for moderately better pictures than any other P&S.
>> Anonymous
>>180103
Weight doesn't really matter in pockets, and do you really stick your hand in straight flat?

I don't see what the big deal is. Stick a wallet and a pocket notebook in and you've got something as thick as a G9.

Also, the reason one gets a G9 or something like it over a cheaper small-sensor camera is ergonomics and responsiveness, not image quality. And those do significantly affect the final picture, even more than image quality.
>> Anonymous
Smallest you can buy is Canon SD40.

No IS and it's old..... so noisy.

But it's fucking tiny.
>> Anonymous
>>180108
Or even, you know, just stop bitching about "pocketability" and carry the thing on your shoulder. Women do it with handbags on a daily basis.

>>180108Also, the reason one gets a G9 or something like it over a cheaper small-sensor camera is ergonomics and responsiveness, not image quality.

pro tip: g9 is a small sensor camera with poor ergonomics and responsiveness
