Perspective is nice, and I think it really captures the moment. I like it.
>> Anonymous
this is a good shot

get rid of the black stuff on top, clone the blue wall

wall line is on a slant

looks too flat, there is no depth at all to the colors

shot itself is boring except there's a cool pose, 5/10 overall

Completely missing the point of this picture.

>>299607Completely missing the point of this picture.

okay, if the point of the picture is a snapshot, then yes i completely missed the point because it's a snapshot and i shouldn't critique it as a photo

but please explain how i am off in what i said

the pose is nice and all but the light is flat and boring. go steal the flash from that guy in the other thread and use it to make some interesting light. maybe some cool shadows on the wall.

the black bit at the top gives the photo balance, and excentuates the difference between the geometric shapes in the background with the human form. it also gives it better location it comes of more as a ballet dancer practicing without the cliche bar and mirrors, rather than dancer infront of plain white wall.

excentuates isn't a word

there are no geometric shapes in the background

and somehow a blue wall magically made it better than the "cliche bar and mirrors" and "plain white wall"?

man, some of you have no taste at all

so, i'm going to assume you're trolling here or have nothing to say to defend the photo

I think this photo really conveys the "practice makes perfect" ideal. it's as if she's at the studio late at night, perfecting her performance, doing what she loves, imagining herself in the limelight or some shit.

The cool, calm, and casual atmosphere with soft ambient light and lone dancer really bring a "real life" side to the image, as opposed to being a dancer all done up in costume, on stage with bright lights and scenery.

Had there been lights and backdrops it would've just been another "oh hay a dancer" pic, instead of revealing what goes on before the show.
>> sage else !L6xabslN96
well, i'd say the lighting is actually perfect for use as stock photography. as an independent photo, it's pretty boring but i remember trying desperately to look for photos like this one on free stock photography sites to use in my visual design assignments.

those are all great excuses for a snapshot
>> Anonymous
>>299648
it's a snapshot which captures a candid moment, so to me, it's a great snapshot photo.

not sure if this was dickery or semi-dickery

what you are saying makes sense and i have taken photos like this as well. while these can be satisfying to you they usually are just crap to everyone else. usually the problem is photographer failure. in this case you have failed to capture the feeling you felt/wanted.

i still say kill those overhead lights and use off camera flash. you would have gotten far more interesting results.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
Someone gimme an acceptable definition of snapshot and photograph.

I'm intrigued, those two are concepts that get thrown around but never expanded beyond a flicker of trollistic angst.

Oh girl is well hot, i'd show her my en pointe.

>>299660
I'm not OP and I would've used an off-camera flash as well, just offering my opinion on the photo because snapshots aren't always shit.

I didn't say that it was the best way to capture the moment, just commenting on what it is for what it is.
>> Anonymous
I dunno.. my definition would be if it sort of looks like you could've gotten it from luck or spray-and-pray, then it's a snapshot.

If it looks like it has a hint of careful planning, then it's a photograph?

But I guess you can get good snapshots, soooo it would be a subdivision of a photograph. Except a photograph is better.

fuuuuu

I define a snapshot as going "oh hey this looks like a cool pic" *snap*

I define a photo as anything that has some pre-meditation, and usually some effort into setting up the final shot (possibly lights, backdrops)

This looks as if the photographer is another dancer or something who happened to have a camera and snapped a pic while the girl was dancing despite probably being a shot that was set up.
>> Anonymous
>>299678

So everything with a setup not looking real is a "real" photo?

Fuck you. I like snapshots then.

>This looks as if the photographer is another dancer or something who happened to have a camera and snapped a pic while the girl was dancing despite probably being a shot that was set up.

no it doesn't. if it was a snapshot, the dancer wouldn't be posing perfectly and the shot wouldn't have been framed off-center. and it would probably not have been as straight.

it's definitely not a snapshot.
>> Anonymous
>>299681
i never said snapshots can't be good "photos"

>>299652is me as well

shots taken by a photojournalist aren't necessarily snapshots because his or her purpose is to take pictures of whatever he's documenting, so even though he's not setting up the image, he's there to document.

if you're walking home from work and happen past something cool then you've taken a snapshot, but that pic could very well be awesome if you've got a good eye.

this is how i see it anyways, i never thought of pictures as "photos" or "snapshots" until this thread actually

>>299685
so you mean that every day people can't have a good eye for framing? that's fairly pretentious.
>> sage else !L6xabslN96
>>299689
i regard a snapshot as only making sure the subjects are in the frame when taking a pic. also, taken spontaneously/impromptu. anything more is a photo.

now you're assuming that everyday people ONLY take snapshots. that's even more pretentious.

god this thread makes me regret getting into photography
>> falsedust !!ncbmwyNcszp
I like it, for me the only minor gripe is just the angle of the floor. If it's just a snap shot then it's great, but for a series of work just go back and reshoot it but change the camera height to avoid the black ceiling. :)
>> Anonymous
just post more pics of her. this board will become calm and sedate. our minds will be numb and wiped clean. then we will probably take a nap

op here

tyvm for the crit.

black was left on purpose, a little more planning went into this than a snapshot would merit.

working on getting better lights as well.

I didn't want to change the height of the shot, it would have changed the "long look" of her limbs she was trying to hit.

one more from the same day, not the same quality, but what ever. i didn't try for insta art, but it sorta has that feel.

Couldn't be bothered to read all the replies.
This shot has the potential to be nice.
It's ruined by the flat lighting and the background though.
Use a shallower DOF or off camera flash to bring the person out more.

As I know it, snapshots are photos (yes, a snapshot is a kind of photo) taken spontaneously by reacting to something. Spraying your camera around on continuous does not produce snapshots. Seeing a child do something interesting and reacting quickly with your camera will produce a snapshot.

Since there is no formal definition of "snapshot" or a way to measure the "amount of preparation" before a shot, it's pointless to try and strictly categorize shots and I'm sure we all agree that there are such things as good snapshots. Henri Cartier Bresson for example.

As for OP photo, it lacks detail around her legs. I can interchange her thighs and calves and imagine her having a knee joint and a hoof similar to a goat on one leg. It's also too cool. It feels laid back even though it seems the photo wants me to feel movement. Here's my take on it but your lighting made her thighs lighten up in a bad way.

>>299685no it doesn't. if it was a snapshot, the dancer wouldn't be posing perfectly

give me a camera that has unlimited buffer and shoots at 10 FPS and i'll get that perfect pose

wow, are you serious? it's called cropping

>> and it would probably not have been as straight.

oh god, he is serious.. it's called rotating the frame

i see what you mean about the flat lighting, thanks for the heads up.

in your revision, the black line goes through her leg, but maybe thats payback for leaving the black at the top from before.
