Will a lomography ringflash work on a DSLR? I'd like a ringflash to fuck around with, but I don't have the money or any need for a nicer product.
>> Anonymous
no I tried it once, you know Hiroshima......?
yep thats what happened.
>> Anonymous
I think the lomo is really underpowered?
not sure though?
anyone tried?

Looks like it works only for super-closeups.
So not really an effective comparison with a true ringflash...
Really this is more like a macro ringflash than a studio ringflash.

None of the macro ringflashes I have tried or seen have anything near the power for general fashion work, but you can have some fun doing close-ups and head shots with them as long as you keep their low power in mind.

I would only suggest getting one if you mainly want to do close-ups and macro as then you'll get the best value for money out of them. That way anything else is gravy.

It will look similar to this.

(Shamelessly ripped from the Strobist.)

If you are willing to do DIY, that is the cheapest bet for that sort of look.

so only good for closeups?
too bad.

Yeah, it's a shame but the fashion look really does need a relatively high power flash. Unless you want to try one of those more extreme DIY projects then you'd have to save your pennies for one like the Alien Bees offering for fashion and portraits.

It is a rather distinctive look though and not something people would want all the time, especially if they could get a couple of other flashes and triggers for the price for a more flexible set up.

You could always get it when you are feeling flush and have everything else you want. ;)

I'm a noob at photography, but what if you attached an umbrella on your camera? How would that turn out? Of course, the flash would have to be very powerful to get any distance.

you normally have your flash off camera triggered wirelessly with some kind of system when you're using an umbrella. You can use diffusers on camera with a flash, but an umbrella doesn't work.

overkill.

could be useful when you have no place to bounce and you need the absolute most spilled light possible
>> Anonymous

No, an Alien Bees ringflash would be overkill.
This looks like a good alternative.

i stand corrected.

sup /p/

i'm making my own ringflash right now. the glue is drying.

Total cost?

$4.84USD.
>> Anonymous
>>163564
Umbrellas don't give the same light quality as ring flash. So you would just get the look of an umbrella.
>> Anonymous
>>163721
How did you manage that? You probably can't even buy a single flashtube for $4.84.

Walmart has "Rubbermaid Takealongs" for $2USD each. I got two sizes of those, and i'm using my 56AM inside it. Looks promising so far, the 56AM is a helluva flash.
