Lens filters Anonymous
I'm considering getting on UV filters for my lenses, mostly for protection against accidental collisions, wayward projectiles, etc.

Any recommendations on who makes good ones?

I've got a HOYA one too. I'm not sure if it was the roll of film I was using, but it seemed to tint everything to a greenish hue for some reason.

...does nothing when it meets a pointed object that ignores the hood.

...which will go straight through the wafer thin, expensive and delicate filter and scratch the front element or jam and rub the now broken glass from the filter into the front element. I have seen this happen. Cases where a lens would have survived if it wasn't for the filter glass being driven into the elements.

The best solution is not to be a clumsy oaf with expensive equipment. UV filters are not bullet proof armor. At best a good one will stop sand and crap, although sand is known to ruin all but the best of them with scratches too.

Good, rigid lenshood is a better bet than a protective filter 99.899999% of the time.

Very true. Even a solid plastic hood will absorb the impact. Then all you need to replace is the cracked hood that acted as a crumple zone. Of course I put hoods on to protect from *flare* as I don't plan on throwing them around but it's a nice fringe benefit ;)

Sounds like the film, but HOYA sucks for UV anyhow.

What is it with you fucking newbie retards? Why the hell do you go and waste money on UV filters? They are more trouble than they are worth because most of them are badly made and thus DEGRADE YOUR MOTHERFUCKING IMAGE QUALITY.

Sorry but this really bugs the shit out of me. I see jackasses with too much god damn money buy a $2100 lens with fucking amazing optics and then put a god damn motherfucking $20 UV filter on "for protection." WHY DO YOU DO THIS SHIT?

Are you THIS STUPID?

God damn, I mean, if you're going to spend the money on a UV filter to protect the lens and you don't want it to degrade the image quality you're already spending like $150 on the fucking filter. Why not just get a lens hood + insurance?

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. These threads piss me off so goddamn much.

I used to use B+W 010 77mm, cost roughly $70

now I just have my bigass hood on my 70-200 2.8

my 18-55 cheapo doesn't have a filter, but who cares, its $100.
