Hey y'all

I'm looking to get a digital slr to take with me on a 2-month trip to SE Asia. I'm looking for something midrange, and I don't mind buying used or missing out on the latest features. My priorities are

- its not super fragile
- if it breaks i won't bawwwwwwwww

Anyway, after asking some friends who are variously talented, one wholeheartedly recommended pentax for its cheap lenses... I know most threads here are nikon vs canon... what about pentax?

I'm pretty brand spankin' new to photography, but I have a month or so to spend practicing before the trip.

Go film. Get a Minolta 8000i or something, buy some crappy lenses, take thousands of pictures, piss off CVS employess, all for around $150. Sounds good to me.

Why do people always forget to mention the most important thing: BUDGET???

I'm going with a 1D MkIII + 50mm 1.2.
Happy now?

Pentax isn't bad. Has the nice advantage that they start their pro features a lot lower on the price range than Canon or Nikon. For example, the K20D is priced competitively with Canon's 40D but has weather sealing. So does the K10D that it replaced, so you might look into one of those, used.

Another Pentax advantage is that you can also pick up a cheap K1000 or KM film camera as a backup body and it'll use the same lenses as your DSLR.

op here, my qualms with film are finding film can sometimes be annoying, cant switch midroll etc etc all the bad things about film. for what its worth, i do have a film point and shoot that i use when i know im going to be drunk and i want to take pictures of friends. So, basically looking to upgrade from that.

For budget, i guess a pretty simple setup for under $900?

As I recall, CVS charges around $6-7 per 24-exposure roll (and you get charged a bit more if your 24-exposure roll actually has 25 or 26 shots on it). Last time I took a 36-exposure roll there, it was about $11 to get it processed.
