took my new eos 400d for a bit of a workout this weekend, shot mainly in program AE mode till i get the hang of Av / Tv. used the flash for the most part till the theatre lights 40ft away started to throw more light. was i doing it right technically / aesthetically? what could have been improved? (pics shot right below judge's table)

Ug.

Direct on-camera flash.

Ug.

Get yourself an EF 50mm f/1.8. Canon's cheapest lens at about $75, and wicked fast. Bump up your ISO. Pretend that you don't have an on-camera flash until you learn how to use it properly (i.e., as fill, not as main lighting)

I have to agree. the 50 1.8 is great, and personally I've learned to get by without EVER taking a flash.

... in fact I think I'm actually phobic of doing so at this point.

even at night when I know I won't be able to get anything.

ha...

Horrible picture, horrible colors, horrible angle, horrible subjects.

I can do a better job with a PowerShot.

so ... which side of the family did that large ass poster?
obviously there's a flip side but i see blonde people in the picture too. either you have a business artist in the family or someone just a lot of spending money (custom banners ain't cheap). you referred to your camera by model number. you aren't in the US, right?

oh yeah, like everyone else said. don't use the on-board flash. bump up the iso next time and look to invest in a faster lens. i think you're already finding the limitations of the kit lens.

don't get discouraged tho. just keep taking pictures. if nothing else, you'll get get better tuned to your canon mechanically (hand-eye coordication).

Yeah, the flash isnt flattering. the EF 50mm f/1.8 would that be USM already at $75 prices?

>>100718
Wish i had a better angle.. and people actually removed the stuff from the front of the stage.. thanks for the feedback :)

It was a Christmas party for a congregation of married catholic couples.. wouldnt know who spent what making the banner... Yup I'm not from the States... Philippines Reporting to 4chan ;)

So just to get this right, on a low-light situation like this, a fast lens, high ISO and Tv Mode (while working my way to the best angle) is the best course of action?

Not USM. Fast as in wide aperture, not as in quick-focusing AF motor. I.e., allows for faster shutter speeds.

What i meant was at $75, would the 50mm f/1.8 lens already have USM capability as well?

And to correct my previous post, its a wide aperture lens, set the sucker to highest ISO, and go to Tv mode?

No. The Canon 50mm 1.8 doesn't have USM. The 50mm 1.4 has it but is about 200$.

You should use Av. Set the aperture you want and let the camera do the rest.

Where can you find the 50mm f/1.4USM for $200?

Same. When I bother to take flash shots my girlfriend is like 'I love this one!' and I'm like 'D: NO SO UGLY THROW IT OUT.'

Pictures aren't even worth taking if they need a flash, eh.

>>101002
Same question. I just got the 50mm 1.4 for $290.

Flash is a valuable tool. You might be able to avoid it for a long time, but why cripple yourself when it can add so much? Learn how to use it rather than being scared of it and you'll see good results.

i don't think we need to get into a discussion about how important light is to photograghy.

anon says 'flash' they probably meant the on-board flash and applying it to low-light/distanced situations. Photography with a lightgun or remote systems is not being badmouthed(or relevant) in this discussion.

Yes we do, yes it is. :P

QFT. For example, someone earlier on said:
