Ok I'm on the edge of buying the Canon G9 camera from Newegg for $460.

It's got a large and very importantly retractable lens.
It's fairly compact.
It has a rechargeable Li battery.
It supposedly takes great pictures.

Does anyone here own a Canon G9? Is the image quality crisp and sharp? That is the single most important thing for me, with being compact in size the second.

I've had bad experiences with Sony and Panasonic cameras taking blurry pictures.

Ugh, it uses 4 AA batteries though. I just don't like non-Li batteries.

it's supposed to be a pretty good camera.

I think that the top end lumix "point and shoot" (looks like a dslr) outdoes it, but at the same time is quite a bit bigger.

For size and convenience I think the g9 is pretty cutting edge.

Of course graininess isn't going to be as good as a dslr, and you have a lot less flexibility over time, but for what it is I think it's supoosed to be a pretty damn good camera.

It's a damn fine camera for a point-and-shoot. But it's still a point and shoot. You're paying almost as much as for a DSLR, but you are getting your monies worth. It's still a bit big, but nowhere near the size of a DSLR + lens. If you have small pockets, you'll still need a pouch to carry it, but between being very portable and very high quality, it's a pretty good buy.
