[_] Pentax?

1) I hate Sony and don't trust anything they make.
2) I want to experiment with lots of cheap, shitty lenses, which Pentax DSLRs are apparently great for.

I was trolling, but the old minolta back cat is quite cheap to experiment and the sony SLR's are all practically made by minolta.

personally dont be a stingy fucker as youll regret it down the line, just like the other guy who brought a pentax not so long ago.

buy half decent first off and avoid having to re-do it again further down the line and making a loss.

>>156003
Interesting. I want to use this mostly for experimenting and product photography (similar to this: mccartyphotoworks.com) so the Pentax appeals to me for the lenses mostly...

>personally dont be a stingy fucker as youll regret it down the line, just like the other guy who brought a pentax not so long ago.

So buying Pentax = being stingy? Since when? Other than Nikon's DSLRs I'm not sure what you're saying is superior, and again, I want to be able to get lots of lenses cheap and I like using old glass.

K10D...it is incredibly better in nearly every aspect.

Thanks for the opinion.
If these cameras are like OMG TOTAL SHIT then I'd consider something else, but I don't want to/can't afford to really spend more than $800 on a camera right now...

you'll love it, got a k100d myself. have a shitload more lenses than my faggot ass d40 friend. just go on ebay, you can get ridiculous deals on old lenses, that still look and perform great.

and btw, the guy that bought that pentax and said he regretted it, he was trolling

>k10d, get it used

OP here.
Really? Used?
I mean, the new prices are retarded (holding strong at $700) but I'm normally worried about buying used... What should I look for to make sure it's OK? Just general wear & tear?
>> Anonymous
>>156358
Buying used is best for most things.

Just check the rated shutter actuations of the K10D, and then the number the one you're buying has clocked up, and compare them, just like miles on a car.

And just run the camera through it paces on a few test shots: make sure the viewfinder is good, the meter and autofocus is working, etc.
>> Anonymous
>>156360
>check the rated shutter actuations

What is?
>> Anonymous
>>156365
Shutters have moving parts. Like all things with moving parts, they eventually go kaput.

Manufacturers offer a conservative estimate of how many shutter actuations (in other words, how many times you take a picture) the shutter is good for. Google it, find out what that is. If it's close, it's probably a good idea to find a less-used model, because once the shutter goes out, you're going to have to have a new one installed.
>> Anonymous
Ah, cool. I didn't know the cameras kept records of shutter actuations.

Some do, some don't.

OP again. Started talking to a seller.

>Yeah, this camera is in nearly perfect condition (perfect would be unopened). Although there is no way to tell shutter number it hasn't been fired more than 1000 frames. I purchased the camera in Feb 2007.

He wants $600 and is a pro photographer. Says it was his backup. Worth buying? It is the full kit.
>> des
>>156397
eh, you can get a K10d kit from amazon for $800. You could probably find them refurb for a little less at this point.
I'd save up another couple weeks and get one new/refurb. Unless it's fuckmint and you shoot for $500.
At $600, It's not bad deal, just not great.

Ask to take a few test shots on your own memory card. Take them home, check the EXIF.

I found a good M42-EF converter for M42 lenses to Canon EF mount :D

However the lens I bought it for was crap - too soft :(

>>155977

Never tried the Pentax to have an opinion on them, my only advice I can give is to go into the camera store and try them out, take a few photos with the lens you are looking at buying, and seeing which ones feels right for you, and looking up reviews on the net to see if it really is the right one for you.

Did you get a focus-assist chipped adapter? If you are doing full manual, you maybe hitting this: http://www.jayandwanda.com/photography/dslr_man_focus/man_focus.html

TL:DR cheaper models use micro-lens focus screens tuned to f4.0 or so and lie about focus with fast manual lenses.

I'm using a 400D with plain mechanical adapter and manual focusing at larger apertures is complete guesswork. Hardly doable. Not enjoyable at all.

//someone suggest good&cheap chipped M42->EOS adapter?
