>>170029most of the Canon A-series doesn't even have manual controls...

more like, most of A series have manual except select few where Canon decided to take them out for no reason

the whole point of A is manual modes compared to sd, minus body size

I meant most decent cameras. All the one's I've looked at (Canon compact and slr-like) have manual. Maybe not the super slim ones.

if it has a little control wheel thing, it has manual controls. if it doesn't, there's the chance it's in the menus only

but most A have it, then Canon stopped putting it for some reason, and the new ones have them again.

It's something you control with the camera, just like exposure. You use the viewfinder to control composition just like you use the command dials to control exposure.

Actually alot of the super slim ones have manual controls too. My sd1000 does.

Yeah, they call that "Camera M". I actually had to download the manual to verify that that doesn't actually give you any real manual controls.

The A650's is 1/1.7" (which I noticed, but rounded to 1/1.8" because I'm lazy), but the A720IS is 1/2.5"

650 is 1/1.7", same as g9, same lens

720 is 1/2.5", same as s5, minus lens

lulz at s5 and g9

already had a point and shoot, ready to move up.

i'm in the same boat as you OP and i was dead set on the 400d.

but recently, i found about the minolta 7d and it seems like a better purchase. the body is around $450 used which is only $60 less than a new 400d body.

the real advantage of the 7d comes with the lens system. from a cursory glance, ef/ef-s lens are pretty expensive while there's a bounty of cheap minolta a-mount lenses. most of the a-mount lenses are used but i don't why that would be a problem if you get it from a reputable seller.

but did that point and shoot have full manual controls?

You can easily see if a Canon A*** has manual by looking at the wheel. If there's only an M followed by a green A then some scene options, it's stripped. If you see P, Av, Tv, M, then the green A, that's manual.
