I remember back in college I tried to do HDR with some of my black and white photos in the darkroom.

Yeeaaah...

Those were total shit. I'll see if I can dig them up anywhere and scan them for the lolz. (But I think I tossed them out after screaming "Fuck this shit!")

But for now, here's one that I came across that hurt my eyes.

So... about HDR, since I am new to it. Properly done HDR images don't LOOK like HDR images, do they? They just look 'correct' or 'natural' or... something?

Included is an HDR attempt made with 2 images. The first with the exposure for the grass, the next for the shadows, and the last is the composited one. I just whipped it together so I am sure there are a few spots where it is slightly misaligned, but... I don't know, lol.

I really like the black and white one here. Before this, the onwly black and white HDR I had seen is the one I'm posting right now.

>>74329
i guess the point is to make them look more vivid and attain a higher contrast where you can't by normal means.

HDR is to get more dynamic range, but the reason these shots mostly look shit is they exceede the dynamic range of our own eyes.

HDR should be used to compensate from the lense/camera to our eyes AND NOT FURTHER!

almost appealing in b/w.

Whenever I start tonemapping everything turns to shit even before I adjust ANYTHING. Any suggestions?

DO NOT apply HDR/tone mapping to boring pictures hoping to make them look good. DO NOT overdo the effect, unless you aim for a totally surreal picture and know what you're doing.

The above simple mistakes are made in 99% of HDR photos on the internets. HDR, like fisheye, IR photography, multi-exposure, etc. is an effect better used sparingly.

holy crap, HDR that looks really good, I'm sold. Print it out and hang it on the wall.

B&W looks a million times better than the color.
approved.
