that's too much for a used d40

d40 lacks a focusing motor (no auto-focus) and i believe you may also lose metering capability with old lenses.

with the same budget and brand, i highly recommend the d70/d70s. backwards compatible and dual command dials. don't get tripped up by marketing. unless you are doing posters 6 megapixels is fine.

the d40 is auto focus capable with all nikkor dx lenses

the motor is built into the lens...not the camera

D40+old lenses=instafail.
You're gonna have to do metering and focussing by yourself, and considering the fact that you want to buy a D40, you're uncapable of doing either.

Buy a D50 or a D70.
Or a Canon.

it doesnt really take a rocket scientist to focus and pick the exposure the meter says

Eh. READ.
NO METERING ON OLDER LENSES.

Idiot.
If you mean normal AF lenses yes they will, but lenses from like 20-30 years ago (u know, with the little pin on top?) DONT.

I don't know exactly what OPs lenses are, but if they dont have built in CPU, you're fucked.

You make it sound like it's the end of the world. A lot of people managed to get good photographs without a built-in meter and autofocus for their camera.

But if OP's a noobcake when it comes to photography, either he read stuff on exposure and manual focusing or he's fucked.

bump for truth.

cry a little more. All lenses will mount just fine, all he will have to do is MF and get the hang of sunny 16, both are not difficult and your recommendations of a D50 or D70 will result in the exact same scenario.

Yeah, but those people were using cameras designed for manual operations. I.e., big bright 35mm viewfinders with microprisms and split-prism rangefinders, and cameras with separate dials for aperture and shutter speed.

Do you have a digital SLR, or are you film-SLR only?

i have a D70 (my film ones are F60, FA and F5)

This is going to be dumb question, but I may as well ask.

What is it about old lenses that prevents you from metering? Does their communication with the camera include info on how much light they transmit at various apertures or something similar?
>> Anonymous
>>145558
Nothing about the lenses. It's just Nikon likes to remove various features from its low-end bodies to try to make anybody serious about photography buy at least a Dx00.

Why would a meterless camera with one control dial be harder to operate than a meterless camera with two? Less fluid, sure, but that same thing exists with a metered one-control-dial cameras.

>>145558
I've been wondering this too. My best guess is that it has to be in the lens since the sensor is unexposed while you're using the viewfinder. Can the new SLRs with live preview though meter on their own?

Just that.

It's annoying as hell every time I shoot full manual with my single-wheeled SLR. It's one of the main reasons I plan to upgrade.

(Oh, and unmetered, you don't have the option of Av or Tv mode, which only has one user-variable so only needs one wheel)
