I recently got a D80 ('tis the season), and I've been thinking about RAW.

I understand basically what a RAW is and what it does, but I'm thinking about what program to use to edit the RAWs.

I understand Photoshop has some raw editting, but I'm not sure how good it is, same with UFRaw. Lastly (that I know of) there's Nikon Capture NX.

So, out of these (and including any I don't know about) which has the best RAW management. I know that RAW's differ from camera to camera (and the D80 uses '.nef') so does this come into play for RAW editting?

Thanks.

Capture NX has some nice features, but is slow as fuck. By far, Lightroom is the best out there. Aperture is basically the same thing, but crashes all the fucking time and has a confusing layout.

Nice 'shop.

I have lightroom but I haven't even shot RAW yet, nor stumbled across the RAW features.

NX has the shittiest work flow, and man is it slow. But when it comes to understanding NEF, it has no competition. You can basically adjust some parameters on the photo's settings after the fact, and the U point technology is like no other. The general rule of thumb is, that other third party software generally applies a best guess on the RAW of camera companies just because they have to accomodate everyone, and they try to approximate what the camera manufacturers set, but in the end, the camera manufacturers know their own cameras.

I use Lightroom, because it's easier for me, as I have to process stuff en masse.

And lol at "Photoshop has some raw editting"...
