I was told to come here from technolo/g/ so here I am.

I am a dinosaur and desperately need a halfway decent digital camera. Can anyone recommend me one that's preferably 150$ or less that'll actually be OK?

Anything here that's in green text!

Trust me, it's worth it. I have a $120 A550 that can take RAW, bracket, use manual settings, and even run scripts.

so /p/, I decided to spend some more and bought:

p;s=electronics&qid=1203736080&sr=8-1

How did I handle?

It's unsupported by CHDK and you can get a lot better Axxx model with the same price. UltraCompact P&S = shit.

Good choice IMO. I personally like my cameras to have *some* optical framing device (viewfinder), but the S or SD series are great. I keep my old S400 set to ISO 400/monochrome and it's just like shooting Tri-X.

um what?
The whole line of cameras is fine
I love my SD1000
I don't understand why people say A Series are so much better than the SD models and why it's compact makes it shit. I can understand a few more manual controls but yeah

Canon sacrificed a lot to get it into that small box and expects you to sacrifice with its price as well. Not to mention LENS.

Oh yeah breaking the bank at $170
so the a series has a different lens and what did they sacrifice?

Oh, you know, image quality and noise. I'd say lack of a viewfinder but that's just nitpicking.

Not a troll. The SD750 has a 1/2.5" sensor, which is about as small as Canon makes 'em, it has no manual controls, and it has a tiny crappy lens. So you've got some real hard limits on the technical quality of your images that you can make with it.

Now, granted, it sounds like the OP mostly just wants a little P&S camera to take pictures ofhis friends, so those probably won't matter to him. But it's certainly shouldn't automatically be considered a troll if a photographer thinks that a camera designed for non-photographers isn't very good.
