Unless you do sports photography, where you'll be shooting lots of frames in a row very often, it won't be too much of a problem to have a slower card. What actually happens is that the camera writes to an in-camera buffer, and then the buffer writes to the card. After a certain amount of images in a row (I'm not familiar with the D40 too much so I don't know about the buffer) you will need to stop shooting for just a few seconds usually while the buffer empties.
