So word has been spread that I 'cn take photos' and I got approached by a really cute girl asking me if I could take some underwear photos of her to give her bf for christmas.

I have a Canon EOS 350D, 2x500w halogen worklights and a white backdrop.
Any suggestions regarding light and stuff?

thanks, that will help a lot.

I don't think so, considering I'm a girl.

Seriously, I know the worklights are not the greatest solution, but I am a student without work so deal. I'd appreciate any tips on making the light softer.

Engage in furious lesbian sex with her

i'd recommend some sort of diffuser/softbox. also, "so deal" is completely retarded sounding. and a real comment: theres nothing wrong with worklights.

I know about that retarded thing. Sorry about that, I need sleep.
I know there's nothing wrong with worklights as well, I just need to getsome diffusers or stuff like that and don't know where to start. I also want to make sure I don't miss anything because it's the first time I'm taking photos of someone I don't know.

parchment paper, for baking (NOT wax paper), makes a good cheap diffuser.
Don't use wax paper unless you like starting fires

Oops, I mean how full is the room? If you're going to use light from above, it's possible if you want something moody. Might be fun for black and white. Again, grab a big armchair (if you have it) white or off-white. Set it under the skylight and the beam of light, set up a tripod and let her have at it. Then bring in the lights mentioned or a reflector/soft boxes and shoot some more with more direct light. I'm assuming you're on a digital and can shoot as much as you need to.

Yeah, she's coming over because she wanted a more studio-like look.
I don't know a lot about shadow and light in that room, but it's pretty bare. Two closets, some boxes, a little table and all that camera stuff. I wished I had a fancy bed in there.

about that armchair. I have a dark blue one, I think that would still do for black and white...

Can you scope it out a bit, say, during the day and go in there to see what the light looks like at different times during the day? If it's a skylight, the best timing would likely be around noon when the sun is directly overhead, but I could be wrong. Do you get no light in there with the exception of the skylight? Is the light really dramatic? Just trying to get an idea. Granted, you really dont' have to listen to me, but I loveee playing around with light and creating photos from it. It's a whole heck of a lot of fun!

that'll def. work, just put her in some light clothes then have her sprawl out, then get on her knees and 'stretch out' then you can get front and back shots too.

Sorry, but I'm absolutely clueless about what you mean by that part.

hehe, then ignore me and just have fun:D

Obviously it's best that these things are done only if everyone involved is over 18 or whatever is the legal age for 'saucy' pictures in your area. Just in case.

If you ever want to have them as part of your portfolio you will need some kind of release form and whatever else is required by local law.

Yeah... I know. Can I come take pictures of this happening!? I love these threads. If only I liked taking pictures of portraits and owned the appropriate lenses.

you don't have enough light to make that white backdrop look good. Use those lights in another spot.

Did that a few days ago. What I learned:

- You NEED a diffuser/softbox. If you cant afford it like me, take a lamp and wrap half-transparent paper around it. You still have the problem where to set it up, since is a simple lamp. A chair wont be enough.

- Buy a HUGE, white blanket. You want, especially if you want to take black/white pictures a clean background. It must be huge enough for her to lie on and to cover the walls/the room.

- Be creative. I took one of my whisky glasses and put it infront of the light. Really nice effect on her skin.

- Tripod. Otherwise you get blurry pictures. There is no alternative.

I thought this setup turned out great, and you can get light strips at walmart for like 8 dollars and bulbs for less than 10. I figure as long as the job pays for the equipment used it's a good deal, as long as it's reuseable stuff.

> Tripod. Otherwise you get blurry pictures. There is no alternative.
Alternatives:
* Use flash to stop subject motion
* Get an IS lens
* Shoot in bright enough light or with high enough ISO (e.g., with a large window with sunlight coming through, or big worklights at ISO400) that you can use a reasonably fast shutter speed.

Are we allowed to suggest poses/clothing? I'm assuming non nude. Of course.

underwear, as said. And as we're both students (and yes, legal - 18 and 19) there's not a lot of budget for additional lingerie. I have yet to see what she considers wearing. As for poses, go ahead.

I bought a photography magazine on impulse today and it had a few light setups consisting of 2x500 watt halogen worklights and parchment paper to get low-key stuff, actually. Now I'm sure I'll have to get a black backdrop and try that with her.

Well a girl doesn't have to be in lingerie to be sexy. A girl in a silk shirt can do the trick just as well. Or perhaps in the bf's favourite sweater/jacket. That was i meant to get at i'm rubbish with suggesting poses. But coy girls tend to float the boat.
