I took a photography class this year, and my professor had us spend a week with a Holga (which is a long ass time considering my classes only last 3 weeks and 3 days. My college is on the block schedule). Yeah they were pretty kool, we should get more people posting their pics. If I can manage to get some of mine scanned I'll post em.

What is so great about holgas? I don't get it.

They take terrible pictures and are plastic crap, but people like to pretend that when you take a shit picture from it, it is part of the "style".

In the case of>>83631, the point is that if you learn to take good pictures with a shitty camera, you'll always be able to do the same with a decent one.

The simplicity of the camera prevents you from relying upon any automation. That way, you're much more involved in the photographic process. They're also prone to light leaks, which means that you are never sure what strange things will happen to you film. Sometimes this ruins pictures, but often it produces really kool effects. This randomness makes you less careful about each individual shot, but encourages you to produce a larger volume of work. Basically the Holga helps train your eye and your brain for photography with "better" cameras. I for one learned how to properly use the "bulb" function, which allows you to keep the shutter open as long as you hold the button.

Anonymous hit the nail on the head right here.

I've yet to see a good photograph from a Holga that couldn't have simply been better with a higher quality camera.

Personally, I'd recommend a Yashica Mat 124 if someone wants to get into MF and ween him or herself off of automatic junk. You'll have better quality images, actual aperture and shutter speed controls and TLRs are fun as hell to shoot with. They 2-4 times as much as Holga but that's still less than $100.

Sure. But get a good camera for starters. And learn2photoshop if you enjoy the lensflare, ghosting and random artifacts.

HOLGAS ARE BULLSHIT.

signed, there are other cameras that are "dumb", that make you learn the fundamentals of photograph and give you NO handholding.

there are better ways of learning photography than on an over-hyped, massively marketed plastic piece of crap.

as far as the artistic value of having a light-leaky camera goes, it gets old about as fast as HDR

massively marketed? ??? ?
