From memory, I think he often shoots on 11x14 film.
He purchases cadavers in Mexico, shoots them in a studio he has there, then finishes up back home n America.
I've never really looked at this particular photo. I love that the disembodied arm is clutching the clock that is just about ti hit midnight. The small, classical statue on the right brings in some relation to 19th century ideas of education and wealth. Grapes symbolize life, but are placed right were the arm was cut off.
You could keep going with this, but I'm just trying to point out that aesthetics are not everything. Witkin uses a lot of symbolism in his works.
