Is it safe to buy a ~10$ [7$] battery from amazon?
Honestly I have no real knowledge for mixing and matching batteries, or just the general other than using them.

I was thinking of buying a second battery as a backup, but I'm also a sucker for saving money when I want a lens.

This is pretty much a bold faced lie. Don't go completely cheap on them, but don't think you have to get a battery with your camera manufacturers name stamped on the front of it. I've got the standard battery and a $10 battery I bought online and can hardly tell the difference between the two in use. The Canon logo means "pay more for me" not "I'm automatically superior"

Straw-man argument. I never once said anything about exclusively buying manufacturer-branded batteries. Shut up, please.

I bought a couple cheap batteries off ebay for my camera and they are great. In fact, they have higher capacities than the one that came with the camera.

Did I quote you as saying that? Didn't think so. when it comes to camera equipment and the "you get what you pay for" thing, people almost always think "OEM = BEST QUALITY!"

The truth is that a lot of the cheaper batteries are pretty much the same thing as the more expensive batteries, OEM or not. I forgot the name of the manufacturer, but I recall reading somewhere on here about one of the off-brands being manufactured in the same plant as the OEM Canon ones. The only real difference between the two is the logo and the price.

Even if the batteries only hold the charge for half as long, you can practically get triple the amount of the cheaper ones for the same price as a single OEM battery.

thats true too.

Only thing I'm worried about is breakage.
Is it common with these?
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
Nah. Had a pair in the XT that I raved about for a while, now the fuckers won't hold a charge for an hour. Plus, you risk shorting your camera and voiding the warranty. Don't be a cheap fuck and spend the extra $20 for OEM.

It is unlikely, but cheap batteries have been cited in cell phone explosions and laptop fires and the like. Some occurred DURING USE, not charging. There was an article I read once talking about low quality chemicals contaminated with metals inside of the battery could cause it to overheat during discharge.

Rare, but probably not worth it.

i hate when im out on a gig and i see other photogs changing battery and memorycard.
my battery is good for over 2000 shots, and i have either 8 gig or 32 gig memory cards, depending on if im shooting jpg/raw.
theres no excuse as a professional to have shitty equipment letting you down

Everyone I know buys their camera batteries here and never had problems with them.

Third party batteries are fine, they go through the same safety regulations as every other electronic device. Are you going to trust /p/ where the majority of users have macs?

>>228765It is unlikely, but cheap batteries have been cited in cell phone explosions and laptop fires and the like.

OEM batteries were subject to the exact same problems. Both Dell and Apple had to recall laptop batteries for fire/explosion risks. Almost all lithium-ion batteries are produced in the same group of factories, regardless of what name gets stamped on the case... sometimes there are blips in quality control, it happens in any industry.

I've used lots of cheap ebay batteries. They were always as good or better than the OEM ones. Considering that in many cases the OEM batteries are 3-10 times more expensive, I'll stick with the ebay ones.

yes

Except that the manufacturer stamped ones are actually recalled when a defect is found in a lot, and if something battery related does happen to your camera with a third party battery, it is like giving the camera manufacturer a get out of jail free card when it comes to your warranty.

So your argument is directed at no-one, and you're simply a raving idiot.

my comment was directed at the majority of people in here who are talking about OEM vs. third party batteries.

Im frankly amazed that people like you manage to make it out oh highschool with the total lack of critical thinking...

Then you haven't addressed my post whatsoever, except to make an accusation without additional rhetoric. I can do the same. Watch:
