Panasonic G1 = $799 USD Anonymous
instant fail?

>> Adorama has it that Panasonic's Yasunori Takase confessed to a US price tag on the newly unveiled Lumix DMC-G1.

>> During a leisurely chat at Photokina, the higher-up noted that the Micro Four Thirds camera would hit US soil for $799, though he didn't bother to mention an expected ship date.

I have the feeling that the Oly people are drooling over is going to be much, much more.

Because of the price? I'd say no. Compare it to the price of the Sigma DP[12] (~$699 street). The interchangeable lenses and quick focusing alone make it easily $100 worth of better if you ask me.

It is instant fail for other reasons, though.

Agreed. But I've still got my fingers crossed.

it's more expensive than every other entry level full fledged dslr

it has no advantage over the classic system

Size, weight, noise (like mirror-slap sound, not like sensor noise).

>it's more expensive than every other entry level full fledged dslr

If you look at the feature set and apparent build quality, it's positioned slightly above an entry level DSLR. Also consider it's the only camera of its type (EVF with interchangeable lenses) and the only other non-SLR digital camera with interchangeable lenses in current production is $5,495. They've got a damn big bit of wiggle room in their pricing.

Would it be nice if it was cheaper? Yes. Is there probably a pretty big margin in their? Yes. But it's not that much, and price doesn't make something fail. Is the Hasselblad H3D fail?

>it has no advantage over the classic system

Besides what AC mentioned, it has an EVF (which some of us, though admittedly we're a minority, prefer), and a bigger finder than any crop DSLR, and the same size as a 1Ds Mk. II (not a typo, III is larger) or D3.

Beyond the typical delicious magnified manual focus, visual exposure preview, adjustable brightness, in-viewfinder live histogram metering, and 100% finder (cheapest DSLR with this is a D300) of an EVF, there's a variety of neat features Panasonic has put into this one that are literally impossible on any SLR. Go read DP Review to find out about them.

It has a swivel LCD, which AFAIK among entry-level DSLRs only Sony has.

Oh, and I forgot to mention adjustable levels of information, available rule of thirds and other framing grids in the finder, and adjustable aspect ratios. These you only get in higher-end SLRs, and for the first two you need to switch components, whereas on an EVF you just press a button.

if it is not a SLR then why do they make a fake prism/mirror box? so stupid.

the image you quoted is a e-420, a "real" dslr

How many lenses does that include? With both 14-45 and 45-200, a price of $799 sounds quite reasonable.
