>1. what are general things to consider, and other things i should take with me? i'm not sure if i'll have internet access all the time, so it's unlikely i'll be able to upload the photos to somewhere safe. should i invest in an extra battery?
Invest in several! keep them in a water tight plastic bag in the bottom of your pack, and keep one on you.
>2. i've also been wanting to get into film. saw what i think is an old nikon F3 or FM2(not sure which) body for the equiv. of $90USD with the current exchange rate. it wont work with my d40 kit lens and 2nd hand nikon prime lenses seem to be impossible to find. and rangefinders are not only rare, but uber expensive. any suggestions in terms or cameras/lenses i should look out for? i want them to be interchangeable with my d40 :(
Why? If your wanting to start film, just get a K1000, there cheap as hell, and a beautiful camera, fully manual, its what films all about, if you dont want to invest in a light meter use your D40 to meter for it.
For your walk abouts go for HP5 400, its a beautiful film, pack some Delta 3200 in case you go out at night.
