If you're serious about getting into macro photography, then buy a macro lens. The higher end canon ones are gorgeous lenses and cannot be beaten. However, as you probably already know, they are extremely expensive. Don't discount other lens manufacturers like Sigma however. Here, check this one out:

A lot cheaper than the Canon lens and still a pretty damn good deal for your money.
If you aren't serious about macro photography and would rather just say you did it, then buy your ring. It's useless and more of a novelty than anything else. Buying extension tubes would allow you to focus more closely, but they come with their own associated problems.
