True artists don't need computers to make up for their lack of talent.

I sure can't wait until 10 or so years from now when all this photoshopped-up unrealism shit passes and people go back to appreciating real photography. You know, the kind that takes talent unlike the trash in this thread.
>> Licorice !yn/5agH55.
>>231800

You do know even the best film images were played around with to make up for mistakes at the time?
>> Anonymous
>>231802

Fixing mistakes is one thing... That's no different than cropping to take out undesired portions of a photo.

What I see happening is that a lot of people who don't know shit are going out and buying Digital Rebels, taking stupid pictures of their toilets and sinks and then rushing into Photoshop, tinkering with some levels and hue/saturation and then calling it a masterpiece.

Ansel Adams never had need for such things, nature was beautiful enough. He didn't need to make the sky grayscale while cranking up the hue on the leaves.

Sure, it was interesting and cool when the idea of digitally altered images were new. But now, it's just too much. It's lame. You can't hide your lack of talent under a swath of photoshop filters and color changes.
>> Anonymous
>>231808
Adams didn't have photoshop but don't for a second think that he didn't manipulate the shit out of his images in the darkroom.
>> Anonymous
>>231808

>>231808
>You can't hide your lack of talent under a swath of photoshop filters and color changes.
You can.
>> Anonymous
>>231817
Exactly. The hallmark of Adams's approach was that the processing and printing work was just as important as the initial exposure.

""The negative is the score and the print is the performance."
"Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships."

Oh, and:

"For me the future of the image is going to be in electronic form ... You will see perfectly beautiful images on an electronic screen. And I'd say that would be very handsome. They would be almost as close as the best reproductions." (1975)

"I eagerly await new concepts and processes. I believe that the electronic image will be the next major advance. Such systems will have their own inherent and inescapable structural characteristics, and the artist and functional practitioner will again strive to comprehend and control them." (1981)
>> Anonymous
>>231833
No, you can't. A bad photograph is a bad photograph, boring and poorly composed, etc. no matter how well it's processed. To borrow Adams's score and performance metaphor, it's like if Django Reinhardt, Jimi Hendrix, Charlie Parker, [insert more musicians amazing on their instruments] teamed up and did a cover of that "superman that ho" song. It'd be well performed, but it would still suck.
>> Anonymous
Damn beethy! Tell me, please, how you did that?
>> Anonymous
>>231839
Would that suck?
>> Anonymous
>>231817

yeah he did, but the difference between his photos and these are that his are actually good.

I shoop the shit out of mine too, but i do things that are more subtle.. i.e. darken hot spots on portraits that distract from the face / selective contrast / selective brightness / selective sharpening / color correction / cloning out distracting things or ugly blemishes / etc

this over-the-top shooping LOOKS gimmicky and LOOKS photoshopped.. when things are this blatant, they hardly ever become canon.. it will pass.
>> Anonymous
>>231800

you're an elitist faggot who's just learnt about Ansel Adams in community college or some shit so now you've developed a hate towards image manipulation because you think that makes you old school and it seperates you from the unwashed masses of Myspace

dickheads like you make me sick, you're a stuck up shitheel who latches onto a small aspect of a subject and blows it the fuck up in an attempt to make yourself seem like an interesting person

manipulation has been around forever and the fact is that some of your favourite photographers (don't worry, you'll learn more next semester) would have used photoshop if it had been around and you'd be praising them anyway because you're right, talent cannot be hidden but it works the other way round too, people aren't going to suck your dick and call you the next great hope just because you don't use filters

that's cool though , you keep your beliefs and opinions but hey, here's an idea, why not draw your pictures instead of using a camera since it's kinda like cheating just to take a copy of something in front of you. we wouldn't want to pollute you True Artists and your enormous talent with something that does something for you would we?

digital manipulation takes skill, just like any other aspect of photography so please don't delude yourself into thinking you're a better person and please go fucking kill yourself you absolute cunt of a human being
>> Anonymous
>>231936
>don't delude yourself into thinking you're a better person and please go fucking kill yourself you absolute cunt of a human being

I'm on the same "side" as you, but oh God the irony.

>>231865
It only looks over the top because we're used to photography = realism, in the color palettes and contrast curves of Kodachrome, Ektachrome, Velvia, Tri-X, HP5, etc. Most of it is poorly done, but it's not inherently bad. People said the same sort of things about the Impressionists just because they were used to realism in painting. My own photography is realist, but I can appreciate well-done irrealism if it helps that individual work or that individual artist's vision. Which it can.
>> Anonymous
Digital manipulation will not disappear, I think. The surreal quality one can effect on an image using filters or the HDRI techniques are very useful in stylized artistry. Also the ability to easily manipulate your artwork outside of the darkroom is an amazing quality that should not be frowned apon. I feel you are simply playing the antagonist to fit into the "oldschool" group, as the poster above me qualified it. Making photography more easily accessable should never be frowned on, and if people want to try their hand in photoshop then i congradulate them and wish them luck in their hobbies.
>> beethy !vW/UaE6zYU
>>231727
btw this is also mine... does not belong to anon.

anyway.. the image with the chick is basically your typical handheld HDR with 3 exposures.
everything after that is rigorous clone tooling (because of the artifacts HDR causes)... and selective adjustments everywhere.
i don't remember all the steps at all because it took me around 1 hour.
the face of the model was basically all fucked up and mutant looking, so that took me like 20 minutes.
i remember manually hand painting it... good thing i'm also a drawfag.

as for the 2nd one... also a HDR but a lot of clone tool fixing in the sky ... and /p/ suggested i'd make the yellow connecting bits of the playground thingie MORE YELLOW. ...so i had to magic lasso them individually only to slightly up the yellow.
other than that it's just curves, replace color.
curves is your friend in photoshop... use all 4 channels... once you do it long enough it's sometimes all you need to use.

as for the 3rd picture (the one posted by anon) .. standard desaturation.. curves ... and selecting the area around the model to clear the background a little but not completely.
