And finally, a cat. No lens test thread is complete without one.

Before anyone asks, they were all taken with the 50mm. As usual, C&C appreciated.

Not enough DOF on most of them. Subject out of focus on almost all of them.
But whatever is focus, they are tack sharp.

So, either go manual focus or do better.

i just ordered one of these 2 days ago. im excited.

Should I go for f/2.8 or smaller? I usually restrict myself to ISO 800 at the highest. Most of the time I/the subjects are moving, so is a shutter speed of 1/60 sufficient?

And on focus... I usually shoot with the AF point set to the center.

The camera focuses to the selected target. If the main subject is not in the selected focus point, subject will be out of focus... simple.

So either use other points (that's what they are for...) or center subject & crop later :)

Aperture doesn't usually matter (DOF-wise) when you shoot stuff from a bit further away.

Shutter time, well. What do you want? I sometims use 1/30 or lower when I pan cars, boats etc. When I want to freeze motion in volleyball game, something like 1/2000 is nice... so it depends on what kind of motion you want to capture :P

Or focus on the center, half-press the shutter, then recompose before firing. That's what I do most of the time. It's like manually focusing, but you don't have to actually deal with the inaccuracy or slowness of manually focusing.

That's what I do all the time. Unfortunately, it seems that something had gone wrong.

I don't care how good you are at manual focus, you're not going to beat a computer at f/1.8 in either speed or accuracy unless you're focusing on Infinity.

If one is shooting at f/1.8, he's probably doing portraiture or some other application where the photographer would desire a specific part of the subject to be focused on. Autofocus could go to the nose, the mouth, the eyes, the ears... anything on the face, probably some bad average of all of them. Unless one is standing a meter in front of a face, try getting your autofocus to specifically focus on a particular eye.

See above, re: picking your autofocus point.

I get my autofocus system to focus on particular eyes quite frequently, thanks.

I usually set the autofocus to the center part of the frame. f/1.8 was due to the lack of light that day. As for the ISO... well, I'm still trying the lens ;)
