Oh NO! there's another fire going on up there?

Yeah, there's another fire and this time they think it might be arson. The Griffith Park area has been burning all day today with up to 600 acres burned so far. The LA Zoo was evacuated and the merry-go-round/pony area got caught up by the fire.

I don't have any fire pictures to share. But I just wanted to say that this shot is pretty cool looking. If only that guy in the white sleeveless shirt weren't in the lower left hand corner. He's very distracting. In the thumbnail, I thought that he was some blurry post or something like that.

Well, shit. I hope everyone's OK. Unfortunately ALL the fires lately have been arson/man made accidents. It's a shame.
>> elf_man
Oh no, I hope this doesn't get any bigger. Nothing but big fires lately, I swear.

I completely agree with you. It was actually this spandex-wearing girl on top of an SUV taking pictures of the whole thing while her boyfriend idled the car. Anyway, I was in an area that was set up like the paparazzi with people handling much better cameras than my entry-level SLR. All the photographers came out last night to witness the show.

Update: Currently 40% contained and fire may have been started by a lit cigarette. Also, everything smells like a charred barbeque.

So... when do we get to see some pictures of the girl in spandex? Because that's relevant to my interests.
>> elf_man
>everything smells like a charred barbeque.
Yeah, I suggest having something to breathe through when the ash starts coming down. Holding a bandana over my mouth really helped during the fires last year.

We actually got evacuated to palm springs during that fire. It sucked; made it through right before the highway closed down.

>>46234
Fancy camera's don't make better photographers. Your shots are very dramatic; I hope they can get it under control soon. I will refrain from ranting about idiots who start these fires.

I remember. My parents got evacuated too, but it was only for the one day.
Gotta love these assholes who still drop firestarters out their windows.

The thought did cross my mind.

I tried creating an HDR image of the image above, but it didn't quite turn out the way I thought it would. Any thoughts, guys?

Holy shit that's deadly, but extremely beautiful.
>> elf_man
Maybe this is bad, but I love the light after a fire, it ends up all pink and orange, filtered through the ash. First time I saw that was in highschool, after a minor fire, and I was blown away.

One of the big ethical conundrums of the photographer. Is it callous to look at a scene of human tragedy and/or carnage and think to yourself "Wow, that would make a great picture"?
>> Anonymous
>>46257
It depends. If it's something you can't do anything about, you might as well take the picture. But if you're intention is "this will make for an awesome picture so I can make millions of monies off of it," then that's totally different. Personally, I would take the shot because it would capture a moment of my life, and if I could get a good angle, it would only further emphasize the event as something that affects numerous people and things.

You should always want to help people when you can. But sometimes it's just out of your hands and sometimes taking a picture can't help anyone at the moment, but may give insight to some people down the road (lol posterity).

This is the very first photo I took last night while driving in my car. Not exactly the best shot, but it was the best I could do in my haste.

those people are gutsy, going that close to the fire. wow.

I really like how this one is heavily weighted at the bottom of the photo... it kind of makes the fire seem so much bigger too.
