Should I buy it?!? Anonymous
I walked into Costco and they had the D80 w/ 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses included With a case for $1299.00. Is it a steal or not?

P.S. i don't have a camera and i wanna start off ?
>> Anonymous
I have a d80 that I bought from best buy for about that price with the same lens.

Go to Ritz Camera or B&H Photo for a good deal.

I don't believe Costco is a licensed Nikon Dealer. at least not in Canada, so check that out first, otherwise kiss the Nikon warranty goodbye.

$1300 is a hell of a lot of money to drop on something you're not even sure you'd like. DSLRs aren't like old film cameras, their used price drops a lot faster.
A used D70 would be a better choice for someone starting out because it's a great body and the used prices are tanking. OTOH, xmas might drive them up a bit, but I doubt it. There's little epeen factor in a two-models-old DSLR.

don't drop alot of money on a body... drop it on LENSES!!!!

REPEAT

LENSES!!!

the 18-55 and 55-200 aren't really GREAT lenses, you're better with the 18-70mm, that's a great lense for the price.

Best thing would be to get a D70s second hand or whatver and get your hands on a Nikon 18-200mm VR... the lens may very well be more expensive than the body itself, but it's the best consumer lens bar none. Learn how to operate the camera then move onto better bodies

Again that word again

LENSES!!!

That's about what I paid for my D80 w/ similar lense. It's about average I think.

we have a winrar
I'm not so sure about the 18-200 VR, though. I haven't had any time to play with one, but it's got three things going against it. Granted, the things are out of my internal old school This Is How Shit Is book. Fucking kids, get off my lawn.
1. zoom lens (not *necessarily* bad)
2. superfuckzoom lens (bad AND slow)
3. VR = more shit to break

I won't count the fact that it's G/DX, though, that's just inevitable at this point.

I suggest getting a Sigma lens... they have a variety of new lenses which are quite amazing. The 18-50mm f/2.8 macro (which I plan on getting soon), the 50-150mm f/2.8 (if you like long lenses), and of course the 10-20mm f/4-5.6 (which I own).
>>30734is right... the range is just way too big on that Nikon VR lens. Thought it's probably a very good choice if you're not too serious about photography and just do it as a hobby.

I have the 18-200 VR :)

It's a great lens and i dont think the point about zoom is a valid point especially since the OP specifically asked for two lenses which cover the range of 18 to 200... why have two sub standard lenses when you can have a great quality lens?

Try out the lens yourself, you'll see why people do go on and on about it.

Sure the f/5.6 wont allow you to do great sports photography, but the OP is obviously a first timer would be benefit alot from the VR since it does miracles for handhelds.

The only real downside to the VR is the vignetting at both extremes. At 18mm it's quite noticeable in the corners especially when shooting in daylight.

My personal recommendation and the one i would take if i had enough cash would have been the 70-200 VR f/2.8 that piece of glass is beautiful. the constant 2.8 and the pro glass is wonderful... but we're goign overboard now. OP is a beginner.

sorry, I don't think I was clear->
I was referring to the used nikkor field, not the sigmas; I've no experience with sigma lenses.

I took this with the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. Shot at f/8 and I do not recall the shutter speed.

Perhaps you should try looking for the standard 'kit', which has a decent 18-135mm lens.
