I know that it isn't the camera but the photographer that takes the photo, but my POS point-and-shoot has a horrible macro mode and I have to focus manually. I plan on getting a Canon Rebel, but what else do I need for macro photography?

Focusing manually is nothing to complain about.

You'll need a macro lens to shoot macros with the Rebel. That shot out of the S40 looks fine, though. What's wrong with its macro mode?

Anything else ac? Like a tripod? lens hood? ring flash?

My S40's macro mode always focuses on the background. For that shot, the macro mode blurred out the beetle and focused on the styrofoam.

I'm not complaining about having to manually focus, it's more that I paid for a camera that has a macro mode that doesn't work. *shrugs*

Thanks guys, I'll do some research in macro lens now.

Tripod is a must, lens hood not really, maybe a set of screw-on closeup macro filters, a ring flash would be a good idea in the long run, but is not always paramount.
