Tamron has made some great glass, they've also made dogs. Just like sigma, tokina, vivitar... nikon, canon, pentax, foo :P Google is your friend. As is /p/. Try to buy from places that have sane return policies. If it's a big purchase, see if you can hire the lens for a weekend to put it through its paces. The used market for f-mount stuff is xbox. If you don't need a meter or can work slow for a while while you get used to not using a meter, there are some really great MF lenses out there that are availible for a song. If money is a big issue, stay with your kit lens (assuming it's the fabulous pictured 18-70) and save up. Don't settle for lenses you're going to end up hating anyway. It's a waste of time and bux. If you don't have anyone local, and even if you do, KEH, KEH, KEH.com gogogo. Trolling pawns can be a surprisingly good source for gear, too, if you're careful about inspecting, lucky and willing to haggle.
