I have several hundred photographs to scan, and I am scanning several at a time. Problem with this is that I then have to go back and cut them out and save them as individual files.

Is there any sort of software which could automate that procedure?

comes with a script for doing that.

PS has a script to save layers as files, but it still requires cutting each scan into layers. Better, but not ideal.

Not that I can think of. Unless you write a program that finds the edges of your pictures and crops it into 4 different images, then you'll have to do it yourself. After some repetition, you should be able to cut, paste and save pretty quickly (if you are using the right photo software).

That seems like a pretty obvious concept for someone to create, so it's surprising that there doesn't seem to be an automated way of doing it.

The closest I have found is Ulead Photo Explorer, which claims to be able to separate images that you scan directly into it, but it won't work for image sets which have already been scanned together. I haven't actually tried it yet, so I'm not sure how well it works.
