whats /p/'s take on borders and watermarks?

how do you 'complete' a photograph and make it your own instead of having it float nameless-ly around the interweb.

I just let mine float namelessly around the interweb. My copyright protection is the fact that they're pretty much crap.

if you are running a photography site, then make the freely available ones smallish (like 800 x 600 or less). Put your copyright info in there, preferably in an unobtrusive location, or you can put a larger but fainter watermark across the whole damn thing.

I am about to start a photo site, and I figure having the best, hi-res, hi-quality version NOT online is a good defense. You can have images out there that are large enough to enjoy for screen use, but too small for printing or easy reprocessing. Stamp those fuckers in a subtle way to make people less likely to crop it out, and you may be good 2 go.

OP here. sounds good guys.

but what about printing and framing? im assuming no border if im going to frame, but what about a watermark as a sig? like a painting. is this all personal preference?

Gah,no, don't watermark your print. Sign the back, sign the mat, don't sign the picture.

Adding a border on a picture can sometimes make it look nicer, but any time I do it I can't help but feel really fucking pretentious.

Watermarks- ehhh. I dunno. I don't really think you have to worry too much about people stealing photos on the internet. If someone really wanted that picture you posted, for example, it could be pretty easily cropped out. If you're trying to make a name for yourself I guess you could go ahead. Even then, I wouldn't expect anyone to go "oooh, that guy. Yeah, I like his pictures" unless you take really consistently good pictures.

See, there are PLENTY of ways to mark your image to make sure NO ONE wants it! :p

The faded watermark over the entire image. Obnoxious, but if light enough, doesn't take away from teh image. Not bad....

The watermark right through the center of the image. Obnoxious, annoying, I find it the worst kind. Destroys the image, really, takes away from it all. But it'll make sure no one takes it. Might also make sure that people don't come back...

Lastly, one in the corner. Works fine, been around a long time. If over certain details, should make sure people can't clone/magic brush it away. If towards the center, but still unobtrusive, will make sure they can't just crop it either. I'd say that would be the way to go.

Any way, you still retain the rights. Anything you publish (internet, paper, etc) is yours once it hits the streets.

borders are to make it look like it is uncropped medium format or large direct postive film. there is no good reason to imitate an old professional technique unless it is an actual scan. fake sprockets might get a laugh the first time you see it, though...

or... you know... mounting and framing a picture with a mat board.

yeah. boreders in some cases really do make the image stand out... doesnt really work for holiday snaps of myspace pictures though.

as for watermarks. mine personally is just a link to my DA account and it really does work in many cases... my photos tend to get distributed around a fare bit and commonly used on other peoples sites so it just gets their viewers to notice your own work rather than crediting the person who is in the photo...

make any sense?
