I have a D40, so obviously I need a lens that has the AF motor built into it for the cheapest possible price, as I'm a fucking noob and don't want to go spending shitloads on something I might end up being totally shit at.

also, is there some kind of suffix I'm looking for that refers to the motor being inside the lens? like AF-# where # means the motor is built in?

AF-S.

Also:

>as I'm a fucking noob and don't want to go spending shitloads on something I might end up being totally shit at.

Then why did you buy a new camera, or at least a recent model? If you had bought a used D50, you could've spent less on the body and cheaply bought a 28/2.8 and 50/1.8 (the two cheapest current-production Nikkor primes and a pretty good kit) and autofocus with them.

As it stands, you're stuck with the following options:

1. Sigma 30 and 50/1.4. Good normal to learn on, with a tele for reach and portraits, just like the 28 and 50 Nikkors. Con: Expensive.
2. Sigma 30/1.4. You lose the 50, but you'll learn to make do.
3. Be forced to just go for the 18-55 VR kit zoom or any of the really cheap off-brand zooms. Pros: Cheap, small, okay lens. Cons: It's a zoom, which is bad to learn on, and slow.

Shit, I forgot, these won't autofocus. The 18-55 VR will.

He's new to photography and stupid, like they always are.

How are they limited to those two primes and shitty kit? OP doesn't even necessarily need to auto focus, he's just gonna take pictures of his fucking cat. It really just depends on how still his cat is.

Oh, and I think el cheapo sigmas have AF built in? You can tell with really cheap lenses, because if they have no AF motor then the Nikon versions are usually far, far cheaper.

It's a D40. Tiny autofocus finder is tiny.
>> Anonymous
OP heres some advice: sell your D40, not trolling or anything but do it.

I used to have a D40 and when I came to realise I couldn't do fuck all with I sold it, only 4 months after buying it. Managed to sell it with a camera bag, UV filter and SD card all for £250 to a friend, I then bought a D80 for £500.

If you've got enough money to get a new lens you have enough money to upgrade your camera, which will save you a lot of money in the long run.

>>278919
So what are the main advantages of D80 over D40 (other than being able to AF on more lenses)?
>> Anonymous
>>278921
10MP vs 6MP
3fps vs 2.5fps
11 foucus points vs 3
dedicated buttons, easier to change setting such as ISO, WB, image size, metering, AF etc...
dual control wheels
looks better at higher ISO
better build quality
more compatability (not only in lenses, battery grip etc)
image braketing
depth of field preview
better compatability using speedlights
better kit lenses standard
much larger/brighter viewfinder that you can display a lot more framing info on, such as a grid
lcd screen on top to display shooting info
probably some other shit........

yes, i too was conned into buying the d40 because it got really rave reviews as a beginners SLR. however, im the type of person who tries to deal with limitations rather than bitch about it and give up. i was still fapping to porn on my pentium 1 when my friends were jamming unreal tournament on their 800mhz pentium 3s - and im glad now because i know more about the internet and computers than they do now.

anyways, my plan for my d40 is this:

get the 50/1.8 or 1.4 prime
get the dk-21m viewfinder attachment
get a split prism focus screen

eventually get the sb-600 flash.

i shall be crowned king of hipsters soon.

d40 looks so ugly with a batter grip. one of the other reasons i bought it over the canon 350d is the sexy looking design(that red triangle on the grip is rather fetching), and the nice LCD interface(it has a graphical representation of the aperture!)

i look far more bad-ass than my silver-bodied, 350d toting friend.

it is there isn't a nikon one for the D40, without posting a new thread should I get the official nikon grip for the D80?
>>
>>278984
why bother, honestly? I bought an MB-D80 cause I got a great deal on it brand new. I wanted it to balance my D80 against the 70-200 f/2.8 VR I was using, and for more comfy shooting in portrait orientation. In actual use though it wasn't worth the money, and the battery lasts long enough that you won't run out between charges. It's trivial to bring spares, anyways.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>278984

Some people like them and some people don't. What are the reasons you want it? Have you ever used the camera with one attached?

I've used a D80 with the grip and it's quite nice. Feels solid enough and is well made.
>> Anonymous
I tried it out in the shop and it seemed alright, would be really useful for landscape, and the extra battery life etc. Not sure if it justifys spending £80~ on it though, and you have to buy another battery as well don't you? which is something rediculous like £40
>> Anonymous

I have a grip for my D80, only reason I bought it was because of the environment that I usually work in.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
I know one person that bought the grip for the D80 just because he has big hands and it feels more comfortable for him with it. Some people prefer it for longer or weighty lenses too.
>> Anonymous
Just buy a lens and learn to autofocus with it. I have a D40 and my grandfather gave me an old 50mm lens that he used on his 35mm's. It's a good learning experience.

D40 has a ridiculously small and dark viewfinder, Manually focusing with it even at the best of times isn't going to be accurate.

I used to try on my D50 and D70, Even the D200/D300 now aren't accurate at apertures greater than f2.

I've never used a katz eye split screen viewfinder, but I hear they help tremendously. Not that anyone who has a D40 would install one specifically to use MF lenses...

yet another reason not to buy a d40

>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>279134
Congrats
now give some context,
What aperture lens, what conditions, how much time you had to prepare the shot, if you had to constantly recompose. (Aka moving subject)

because the D40's maximum effective aperture (through the viewfinder) is If i remember right, f2.5.
(D50 and D70 being f2.8)
That means even with a f1.2 lens attached the viewfinder is still showing you what f2.5 would look like.
Making critical focus very problematic.
>> tizzou !!HuouSd+PYUs
>>279317
I've never heard of this relationship between lens/viewfinder.
Where did you learn of this/link please?
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>279320
heres a quote from photo.net while I try to find the article I read a long time ago.

Try it out. Mount a fast lens, and press depth-of-field preview at f/2.8. You will notice virtually no change in the viewfinder. Especially with super-fast lenses the bokeh and the overall look (contrast, sharpness, DOF) of the image in the viewfinder and an actual photo (wide open) are very different -- which is quite a problem when trying to manually focus a fast lens.
The reason is that the prism/viewfinder contrustion has a much smaller "aperture" than the diameter of the lens mount (which usually the limiting factor in lens speed). Things like fresnel lenses and microprisms also alter the look of the viewfinder image.
>> Anonymous
>>279320

google microlenses

the focusing screen on many of these cameras are not quite traditional groundglass.

you can get a replacement (for d40) which has a split prism more useful for manual focus

google katz eye

the microlens effect is easy to see, notice how much more borkehz you get at f/1.4 than you can see in the finder.

and i think it's very easy to see that the aperture is wide open when you mount the lens on the d40.

as for the OP, sigma 30mm is an excellent lens. 50mm 1.8 is a really cheep lens, no reason not to get it and see if it is useful as a MF.
