B+W Conversion, quite new at this and only using the incredibly crap iPhoto.

Thoughts?

HELLO!

The second deer behind the first is distracting. you centewred the deer's head, next time try thirding it (third of the way from the left or righ). you need more contrast on the subject, otherwise it's just a bunch of greys... I've not used iphoto before, but if you can b&w convert with different colour highlights, then play around in the red/yellow end and leave the green/blue ends to be flat. that way your deer should 'pop' a bit more

hope that helps, from one noob to another, good luck and keep shooting!

Or you could have shot in a portrait orientation so all you could see are the deer's heads, making the duplication somewhat interesting. Or, just crop it.

use alien skin photoshop plugin for a realistic b&w effect

Cheers sage rage, I did mess with the colours but unfortunately it's just colour temp. and magenta/green sliders, not individual RGB controls. Maybe I ought to get some decent software? Lightroom or Aperture if I can get a job sometime soon.

As for the composition, I took about five or so shots, and kinda already did all your suggestions on the other shots. This isn't necessarily the best one, just the one I did a B+W conversion on. I was really wondering what you all thought of the quality of the conversion.

Or you can try Nikon's CaptureNX which apparently has good results with Canon once TIFFs are made from the RAWs (according to http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/693323, I can't vouch for this myself) and is exceedingly easy to use while still having some powerful features
