hai /p/

i like to travel and take pictures. i have a compact camera but i've been thinking of getting an dslr. i've never had one before. what kind of camera and what type of objective would you recommend? i like to shoot buildings and people. the thing that i don't like about the compact camera is the narrow view in the shots. i'd like something wider.

What's your budget?

Also, what's with the big of new people who aren't stupid and don't suck? New people are rare enough, but good ones? This is very nice.

Grab a Canon 1000D when it comes out.

my budjet is <800 euros for the camera. i'm probably ordering from germany to save some money. or perhaps buy a used one..?
how about those wide angle lenses. how much should i be prepared to pay for one and would you recommend them for taking travel photos (people, buildings,...). i'd like to be able to get as much as possible to a single shot, kind of preserve what i see with my own eyes. instead of pieces from here and there.

Go to a store (you can buy elsewhere) and play around with all the models: Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony. Pick the one you like best, buy it, don't be afraid to get an earlier used model, and do definitely get a used D50 if you like the D60; D60's gimped.

Avoid Olympus, not good for wides.

Anything 24mm or less. Come back when you've picked a camera for specific suggestions.

Then also get a 50/1.8 and you're set to start learning.
