If you can find a Canon AE-1 online for a price you're willing to spend, then go for it. My photography teacher told my class once that a general rule of thumb was to look for SLR cameras that had a good range of options for manual adjustment. He also said that the Japanese cameras from around the 60's onwards were pretty nice for what we would need them for. There's not as huge of a difference between Japanese cameras from the '70's as there are now with all of the digital technology companies push into cameras now.
Basically, if you do your research and it sounds like a good deal, then go for it.
