Power conservation tips plz rix
need tips in conserving power now that im in DSLR territory.. aside from the obvious (buy a backup battery, quit power cycling, dont use flash often.. dont review photos too much in a middle of a shoot...) which is less power-intensive? AV, Tv, M, A-Dep(?) or P?

In return i post my old photos from an ixus 700 + dying battery. Pics motivational in relevance.

Have a couple backup batteries charged at all times, and don't worry about it.

I've never once burned through two batteries in a full day of shooting, no matter how many shots I've taken. I can get over 800 shots on a charge chimping like mad.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
dont use the back screen at all + use manual, dont turn it off and get an external flash.

Seriously tho even my A100 takes 500~ shots with a full battery so if you are wasting that much power your doing it wrong.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
What camera do you have? The on board flash will drain the juice more, but if you have a hotshoe flash then you don't need to worry.

You'll get hundreds of shots without even adding a battery grip. Unless you are really hammering the shutter then you shouldn't worry too much about using up batteries.

You certainly shouldn't worry about using a setting on the wheel to be "less power-intensive". That's insane. Just use what gets you the best pictures (many will be shouting "MANUAL!").

Read your manual to learn what everything means and does and once you've learned it, stop worrying and concentrate on improving, bonding with the camera and - most importantly - taking pictures.

QFT. I once had to cover a parade at night. Since I do not have an external flash, I had either use the internal flash or shoot at ISO (did both). Exhausted one battery, used about half of the second one.

Good recommendations all around... ive got EOS 400 + kit lens... it was a shoot inside a darkened theater (still with crappy lighting), but now shifting from M, to Tv, to Av, (Tv and M somehow fared better) frantically adjusting shutter speeds for the action shots while the aperture held steady at its max opening (f/4.5, f/5.0) for the most part... i was chimping like mad having the shots in burst mode (i blame crappy lighting) so some shots came out better than the rest... ill see if i can post example pics later

On my Digital Rebel I keep 3 batteries with me at all times. Review time is set to 2 secs and LCD brightness is at lowest.

I can shoot 500+ pics on two of the batteries that I've had for 3 years. One of them I've only had a few months.

>>101636
Is that all? I thought DSLR's were pretty equal in battery life.
My D50 easily does 1200 shots with LCD brightness normal, Review time 15 seconds and meter off 6 seconds.

One weekend out at a cabin I took 1144 shots and passed the camera around a few times for people to review pics and whatnot, and thats when it finally died.

I've had well over a 1000+ on my Rebel body in a day with two batteries using the grip. I sit and review them or show them off with the LCD screen to others when I'm idle too, I'm not being cautious as I've always got plenty spares.

If you use the on board flash a lot then it will drain much faster as the focus assist fires and the flash works hard.

It's worth noting that if you are out on a cold day then you can half the battery life as the batteries cool. Keep them in a warm inside pocket.

So have you ever posted any of your shots here? I don't recall actually seeing any..

Yeah, I posted some bug shots a while ago. Not that you were interested. ;__; A lot of my pictures I can't post though. I've put up some ones I've taken for fun, like the bug ones.

only have one battery and i've used both an xt and an xti and i've taken well over 1000+ shots in one sitting with an IS lens repeatedly on a single charge and not exhausted the battery yet. Only thing is tho when i shoot that many its usually in a short time span ie, 2-3 hrs at a fast paced event so minimal chimping just to double check exposure occasionally (i also use external flash if i do so thats not particularly an issue either)

its really just the reviewing of the pictures that kills the battery imo

and from a technical standpoint I honestly couldn't see there being any power difference betweent he different photo modes
>> Av Mode rix
What i also found out is that Av likes to do long exposures (up to 4 seconds) when the light makes a quick dim, messing up shots (such as this one..) will post best/worst Av/Tv/M shots. (Yes I've hit the limits of what the kit lens can do ;) )

Yes, somewhat disproportionately so. I've burned through an entire battery taking long exposure shots in a total of... about 15 minutes of exposure (so, 30 shots at 30 secs)

Tv Mode wasnt helping for a bit until the theatre lights were brighter. (saw that i was stuck in f/5.0)

Sidenote: had the camera been steadied more, would this shot have any technical / aesthetic merit?

I'm kinda guessing. Keep in mind two of my batteries are 3 years old, so they might not quite have the capacity of a new one that hasn't been charged/discharged so many times.

I also rarely have to change batteries at an event, so I'm not quite sure what the limit is.
>> Worst M mode rix

M mode had me moving the command dial like mad trying to keep up with the light readings but was somehow more adept in giving me the light info i needed to best compose the aperture / shutter speeds. this number right here was a product of a bad aperture choice but i somewhat feel shouldve been salvageable due to the low light and relatively low shutter. (btw, with the exposure meter doubling as a light meter indicator, would that consume more/less energy it would take for Av or Tv to compensate in their own little way?)

The light meter takes so little power to operate that, back in the days of mechanical film SLRs that used the battery only to run the meter, people would run on the same battery for years at a time. The power used by the light meter is lost in the rounding error when calculating the power used to flip the shutter, much less the power used to drive the sensor or the LCD.

If you really want to minimize the power usage, turn off the LCD and focus manually. But seriously, you don't have to worry about running out a single battery in an SLR unless you're seriously spraying the hell out of a room.

If you're shooting in low light, you're pretty much going to keep your aperture at its maximum (i.e., lowest number) the whole time. So use Tv mode (which will make the camera pick the widest aperture, and probably blink at you because it's upset that it can't get an aperture wide enough to expose properly) or M mode (which will be functionally identical in this situation, but less whiny)

What the fuck is this thread about?

It's made of shit pictures and engrish.
>> lol @ Anonymous rix
>>101727
Um, that was the bitter point of it all.. shooting action shots in low light + power conservation and actually ending up with a half-decent photograph. But thanks for pointing that out! :)

As for the engrish, I see no engrish you speak of. ;)
>> Anonymous
I wouldn't call those anywhere half decent. If you think they are half decent, you have very low standards.

Look at the faces of those fucking gooks.
