Tell me you've heard of Merkle Camera & Video?

http://www.merklecamera.com/ they usually cut some really good deals on used gear. It's right on vp between Shepard and the 401.

Beyond that, there's always the fall back of henry's (blargh - moronic staff) the one (both used and retail) at church and queen aren't too terrible. After that I suggest aden camera's, and vistek. Both downtown, just google em.

Blacks is overpriced and useless.

Blacks is indeed overpriced and useless.

I buy gear online almost all of the time. Brick and mortar retail stores are absolutely insane when it comes to actual gear.

I go to Henry's for supplies like film, chemicals, paper, etc. Consumables like that are more reasonably priced at Henry's, and since I have a 10% student discount card there, henry's becomes the cheapest place I can buy stuff from.

OP here. im underage, and i'm thinking of buying my new dslr, so im pretty worried about maintenance, damages, etc. so, i want to know if it's better to just buy the camera without extra warranty stuff, and then if it does get damaged, just get it fixed.

how about pacific mall? i think i saw a cam store there when i went there a couple of weeks ago

Never, ever shop at a camera store in a mall.

Especially if there's an awesome real one in your city, which it sounds like there is.

HAHAHAHAHAHA NO

never buy anything electronic that you intend to keep for more than a week from pacific mall (unless it's a reputable store like Canada Computers, even then, it's risky enough there).

You do know the RCMP has raided that place at least 6 times in the past four years for pirate, bootlegged and illegal goods right?

If you have the money to get a new camera (DSLR) get it at somewhere like Henry's with the extra warranty plan on it, it never hurts. My friend had went out and bought a Sony Alpha with the extra warranty right when they came out, boy did that pay off, the focus locked after original warranty expired, but with the extra, Sony still replaced it immediately.

If you know what camera you want, call around to various places, ask if they have it in stock, price check, price match, wait for sales, etc and then ask around at the bigger stores to see what sort of warranty plans they have on them (I don't think merkles, aden or vistek offer extra warranty plans, but they do have better prices).

Buying refurbished is fine IF you know what you're looking for and don't mind a camera that's been around the block. Check how many shots have been taken on the camera before you have bought it (again, know what you want to buy first!) and if they are over the usual limit of the cameras life span (example: canon d20 usually only lasts 50,000 actuations (though mine just made it back to zero, AGAIN and is still fine)) don't bother. It's safe to buy refurbished and if the shutter quits it's not to expensive to fix.

TL;DR: DO YOUR FUCKING RESEARCH, find the best camera to suit your needs and then look around.

I'd rather have a Ronery camera, with a nice fast telephoto stuck on the end of it.

They'll prolly release it on either feb21, or march21. The d80 wouldn't be much marketable by then so they oughta release an upgrade.
