Hey /p/unks.
My moms birthday is coming up, and she's a photo-enthusiast. She's got her eyes set for a Canon EOS 400D. Now I ask you guys. Is there any camera with quality equivalent or better for less than 800 bucks?

Yes and no.

here's what I wish I'd been told when first camera shopping:

The camera body does not matter. All of the image quality comes from the lens. All of the sensors have been good enough for four or more years at this point. Get your mom a good zoom lens, and whatever camera body with the money you've got left.

Dude. It's your fucking mom. She gave you life, don't punk out and be a cheapfag when it comes to her birthday present.

You're giving your mom a 800 dollar camera for her birthday?

I just took some photos of flowers and sunsets and printed them off for her. Using the camera, laptop, printer, ink, and paper that she bought for me. >_>

When you say "photo enthusiast," do you mean she's interested in producing good, creative photographs, or that she likes taking pictures?

You can get the 350D for less money. In fact, get the 350D *without* the kit lens and use the money you save to buy her a good lens. The Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX is a good starter walk around lens.

I'd say go with canon simply because the range of "affordable"[not really, but as close as you are going to get] but passable lenses available for the EF mount.
