>>296338 this is the best advice so far. Pick any random brand - really whichever has cameras (the powershots and coolpix are good) that look nice to you. Then get one of their compacts that has full manual (meaning you can adjust focus, shutterspeed, aperture, white balance, and sensitivity by yourself), aperture priority, shutter priority, and auto modes. For the first week, use auto. For the second week, try to branch out to the other modes. Eventually you'll want to never shoot in auto unless you see a great opportunity that won't last long. Get a book or take a class on basic digital photography. Get a cheap tripod. Try to take pictures every day.
