hey /p/, I took this shot of me spinning my glow poi last night, and I was wondering how I could improve it. [I know it's a little out of focus, sorry 'bout that]

1. Swing 'em in an interesting pattern. These are just scribbles.
2. Make it not be a little out of focus.
3. Get enough flash in there, preferably off-camera, to show yourself making the light patterns instead of just having the light patterns by themselves.

OP here;
and trust me, having a figure in there makes for an epic fail, as well as not working because the amount of light needed on that long an exposure will bleach out the trails

Adding to ac's point 2;

I've had trouble in the past with focusing this sort of thing. The method I found most effective was:
- mounting my camera to a tripod(I can see you've done this, one way or another)
- using a infrared shutter release(not needed, but i found it helps)
- manually focusing the camera to the point in which you'll be standing before hand.

You may have already done this for all I know, its hard to tell. Keep trying and you'll get it spot on eventually! :D

The best way to improve these pix would be to give up on light drawing and throw away your poi.

on the IR shutter release, i REALLY wanna get one, but no-one seems to have ¬¬
and the focus is out because it was all very ad-hoc, with me and a friend who hasn't got a clue about photography walking to a party and i happened to have my camrera + poi
[also, here's another one of the set, with MUCH cleaner lines]

but that wouldn't improve those pictures at all...

Have your friend stand where you will, use a flashlight and focus on him then he can GTFO and you start drawing.

I love this.
Seeing it has inspired me to dig out ma' old poi from the cupboard :P
What did you change to get the crisp lines?

>IR Shutter
I own this, which can be picked up on the cheap:

tried it, was lame, tried it again, was also lame, but to a lesser degree. tl;dr, it wasn't the effect i was looking for

basically, I used a tree as my reference, and focused manually. Also, it was a slower shutter speed.
if you're a fan of the crisp lines, then here's on i took by accident, but turned out nicely :P [albeit with quite a bit of dead space]

Heh I see what you mean about the dead space.
The colours and fluid lines resemble the default Vista Wallpaper incredibly!

Painting with light is really limiting, its just abit of fun really. Of which I can see you definately had taking these :)

the reason the off-camera flash will bleach out the glow of the poi is because of the color. if you get a more vibrant color, specifically a green or brighter, then you would still be able to see. even better, though, would be fire.
