I have no illusions about abilities as a photographer. I'm an amateur. But I'm always looking for opportunities to get in a little bit more practice to see what I need to improve in.

Right now is an all-night art party in Toronto, called Nuit Blanche. There's a fashion display, with models. I start taking their picture, and one of the models comes up to me and hand me her card. She designed the outfits, and asked if I could e-mail her the photos. Taking the hint, I move up to get into a better position to take better shots. Which is when my battery died. I almost fell through the floor.

Does /p/ have any experiences like mine that has changed what gear and how much of it you carry with you?

only problem I have are my manual focus lenses, no monies for decent AF glass yet. I once almost left for 2.5 fulltime photography in the UK without battery charger, I had forgotten my charger in France. thank god I knew somebody that had 2 nikon DSLR bodies, so he had 2 chargers..

Extra batteries, motherfucker, DO YOU SPEAK IT?

All of my gear purchases have been porncentric. After getting my first little point & shoot camera, I realized that I really wanted a camera without shutter lag and with a wider max aperture 'cause I was shooting porn indoors, so I upgraded to an SLR with a 50/1.8. Then my next really big gear purchase was some strobes and light stand and whatnot, because I realized that even at f/1.8 and ISO400 dim indoor lighting was still kicking my ass. The strobes seem to be working out quite well for now, though. Very few blurry shots from my last outing.

ALways charge up and always have a spare mem card, batt and other stuff. Most of which fits in things called 'pockets'.

You were just going to email her usable pictures? Your battery dying was a gift from the gods, preventing you from becoming a freebie nub for the local modeling community. Praise Crom.

Back up back up back up..

especially if you're getting paid for a gig.

I usually have 3 Ultra II cards with me, One extra battery in addition to me fully charged one in the camera and if i'm using flash, twice as many batteries as i need for each strobe.

That's pretty tame though, i saw a friend's mother's gear who's wedding photographer. Think she must have had 5 spare CF cards, 5 batteries and 3 cameras... but that's fair enough though, the amounts she gets paid...
