People have been doing this for decades, it does work pretty decently. It should really be compared to a monopod rather than an IS system, though.

I always thought of it as being more about space/weight than money.

I still wish there was a magical tripod that was small and light enough to fit in a camera bag, yet sturdy enough for a pro DSLR...

Silk make a carbon tripod that will fit into a small knapsack or a piece of carry-on baggage. I have it and it's great but man is it expensive.

A good cheap trick - I kep one in a 35mm cassette in my kit, just in case. I do prefer a monopod (Trek hiking stick) for tele walkabouts. Beanbags have their uses too.
