.... so i got a bit of money at the moment...

do i get a D3? or do i wait a little while longer and get a Mamiya 645 with a digital back?

or finally get into Large Format like i've wanted to?... bah...

Large format, definitely.

You've got a D300, right? That offers more than enough image quality for when you need mobility.

Then it just makes sense to go right to the top.

yeah i get the D3 good chance i'll sell the D300 or just give it to the old man.

The reason why i was thinking about the Mamiya with the 22mp digital back is that access to film and simplicity... the convenience of working with digital.

I would be using the Mamiya or LF for landscape almost exclusively.

But the D3 could fill the all rounder position... fuck... sorry just talking loudly to myself.

You're right though, i could keep the D300 and use that for all the gigs and everything else too.

Well, look at it this way:

Would you mind lugging a D3 around whenever you want to take pictures? If yes, then that kinda settles that.

Do you want to do your landscapes digital or film? If you want to do them film, that settles that; if you want to do them digital and the answer to the above is yes, it settles it for the Mamiya; if the answer to the above is no you still have the dilemma of which one you'd like better: D300 + Mamiya or D3.

Also- aren't used LF set-ups really cheap, like under $1,000?

$1,000 USD, forgot you're in Australia.

LF and darkroom equipment.

how about starting to take good pictures first.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
yeah the set ups i was thinking were

D300 + Mamiya 22ZD with 645
D300 + D3
D3
D300 + Linhof

I'll do a bit more thinking before i come up with something more, plus i'm kinda drunk, just got home from a night out.

The Aussie dollar is quite close to the US at the mo mo.

LF setups can be quite cheap, but the stuff i've been seeing like Linhof and Sinar + Schneider lenses have been about 3500+

Haven't looked at second hand yet though.

Wait what? You're considering a NEW Linhof?

Just go for one of your other options first and then starve a few weeks so you can get a used Speed Graphic and dip your toes into LF for a bit.

Do you like tripods?

There's no real reason to have both a D3 and a D300, unless you absolutely need a backup camera with the same featureset, ie, your camera is paying for your beer, pizza, and Internet axx. I would personally advise LF, as it's about as far from the D3/D300 as you can get (well, besides a set of paintbrushes...), so it will give you a much broader photographic palette.

tl;dr: fill the farthest-apart parts of the spectrum first.

Yeah, i got a weird thing about second hand goods... besides, i do have the funds available.

Love my 488RC4 with the 190PROXB. I do all my landscape and long exposures with it :)

The reason why i entertain the Mamiya was that with digital it'd be less of a learning curve than to move to LF.

why not keep the D300 and just buy some wicked lenses.
Get a used LF setup, nothing too expensive cause you may not like it.

I forget what you have, but theres lots of good lenses out there that you could spend $5000 on lol

Learn with what you have. Maybe buy one lens. It would be stupid and counter-productive if you buy shitloads at once. You're still a beginner and when learning it is better to focus more.
