10-20mm is awesome.

Sigma? ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Yes It is awesome. Don't bother taking any pics with it on your film body though. I tried one, and it looked freaking ridiculously bad. almost like a circular fisheye it cut soo much off

Ahh I assumed otherwise.

Did you buy it online? New?
This is one of the few lenses I purchased new, Because I was worried about getting a defective one. However i've had no issues yet.

The lens is naturally softer / less contrasty in the corners wide open at 10mm, But Its usually not an issue. And it dissapears as you zoom in (Snapshot in some ridiculously expensive store related, That coat was $1500)

Terrible quality control reports on this lens.
It's not as fast as the canon one.
Then again, you've now got 10mm, or 1.6 on the crop bodies, which is freaking awesome.

Yeah, bought it online new. I've used the lens before and loved it. It was a toss up between this and the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8. But I'll just get that next.

>>129713

Hope I get a good one, then. :| But it's on a Nikon body, so it's 1.5 crop. ;)
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
IT is a god damn awesome lens. If fuckin tamron didn't announce the 10-24mm i would have bought the sigma already...

so my choices now...
1) D300
2) Tamron 10-24 (or Sigma 10-20) + SB-800 + Other lighting equipment
3) Linhof Technica + light meter + big arse tripod + loooads of film

Lenses and lighting first, body second, unless you've got something really ancient.

tamron lenses are pretty hit and miss too : /

go with option 3

or you could send me some of retarded pile of money you must have to be looking at Linhof Technica so I can finally get my 100-400L
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>129737

Ya, i've pretty much sold all my lenses except the 50mm 1.4D and 17-55mm 2.8 Nikkor. All that i need right now.

I've got a D200 and D70s, so both are fine. Was thinking about giving the D70s to the girlfriend, selling the D200 towards a D300.

I'm actually wondering whether i need an ultra wide. I've borrowed a friend's Nikkor 12-24... great and all... but i think the 17-55 is fine... it's not as wide but wide enough. I do a shit load of landscapes, but that's where the Linhof comes in. Still trying to find a decent one for around 3000+.

My other option was to get a cheap Chinese made Chamonix which is only about 700-800 bucks, but the Linhof will last me forever i guess and i want to sell the shots i make off of it.

Been making a little more money on the side having an art dealer friend sell some of my shots and getting alot more jobs for event photography. 200-300 bucks for a nights work.

>>129741

Yeah i found that out with the 17-50mm tamron, when they get it right it's awesome... but can be hit and miss... i just need to find a friend with a Nikon F mount Sigma 10-20 then i'll be able to decide proeprly as to whether i need the 10mm

i wouldnt buy any lens thats only for digital crop sensor

Get the Linhof.

>>129898
They're just fine for those of us who probably won't upgrade to a full frame sensor. Also, there aren't any 10-22mm zoom lenses for full frame EF-mount Canons.
>> Anonymous
>>129779
If I were you, I'd get the D300 and buy a used view camera of some sort, either now or after a little saving. They can go for just a few hundred (US) dollars in good, working condition on eBay. Then it's just the lenses, tripod, film, and light meter. Although, couldn't you use the spotmeter on your SLR, or do you need incident metering for what you want to do with it?

>>129898
This is silly. A good lens is a good lens. For years people shot both 135 and 120 film, often with both a 135 SLR and 135 rangefinder. So someone would have, say, a 50mm Leica, 50mm Nikkor, and an 80mm Zeiss for their Hasselblad. Good luck sticking the little Summicron on the Hassy.

>>129908
True, good lens is a good lens. However i shoot with both film and digital. Obviously I want to buy lenses that will work with both of my bodies.

It is also easier to upgrade to ff sensor at some point if you already have lenses that will work with it.
>> Anonymous
>>129908
I second this recommendation, other than using your SLR as a meter for the 4x5. A good handheld incident/spot meter will serve you well.

I'll also add that the Linhof Technika is a great field camera, but there really isn't a whole lot to field cameras. If you've got the expendable income, you might as well go for one, but if not then a newer Super or Crown Graphic will do the same thing for a lot less money. There's also the Toyo field, Tachihara, and a few Chinese field cameras that are quite good and priced less than a Master Technika. Also remember that the Technika III (usually the cheapest on the used market) uses different sized lens boards and cams and isn't compatible with any other Linhof accessories or any of the other Master Technika models. The small lens boards on the III also prevent the use of some, especially modern wide angle, lenses.

10-22mm on a 1.6 crop translates to 16mm-35.2mm effective on the crop body.

Canon also happens to make a 16mm-35mm EF mount lens. Unfortunately this translates to over 25mm on a crop at its widest, so it might not be an ideal upgrade path.
>> Anonymous !SDPEsPMnww
>>129969
I know about the damn crop factor. I'm saying that the only way to get 16mm on my camera is to use a 10mm lens, and they don't make an EF 10-22mm lens, so I have to settle for the EF-S 10-22mm lens.
>> Anonymous
I own those lenses.

The range you get is quite amazing, but quality ain't the best of the best.
>> Anonymous
>>129991and they don't make an EF 10-22mm lens

rofl

have you thought about why no one makes a 10-22mm lens for 35mm?
>> Anonymous !SDPEsPMnww
>>130191
Of course I have. I'm not stupid, I'm just trying to explain why the crop sensor wide angle lenses are a good idea--you can't get that wide coverage on a crop body without them. Quit assuming that I know nothing about cameras.
>> Anonymous
lol

An EF 10-22 and EF-S 10-22 would have the same field of view on a 1.6 camera.

yeah i'm just doing more research into view cameras and LF in general.

My choices with DSLR is to grab the D300 and starting buying FX lenses and to wait for the inevitable move up to FX...

Do ya guys have any stuff i should read up on for LF?
>> sv !!vC9KZM3Ch/H
Agh.

So my order was canceled because my bank blocked my card because they thought it was stolen.

I got that straightened out, but now I have to pay more (only $40) because the place with the lower price is out of stock now.

BAH.

What are they asking? I got one from a local shop recently for $500 which I believe is a fair price.

I haven't done too much with it yet, waiting for a trip to Montana next month.

there are a few forums that are devoted to large format photography, but they're just as bad as dpreview. endless flamewars over whether pyro is a wonder chemical for prints, whether schneider or rodenstock is better, etc etc etc. plus, the style of photography presented is rarely innovative. it's usually just california photo club stuff, e.g. austere landscapes, usually in monochrome.

best to get a book.

the camera, ansel adams. covers 4x5 pretty extensively, along with MF and 35mm.

Using the View Camera, steve simmons. the title says it all.

Heh.
>the style of photography presented is rarely innovative [...] e.g. austere landscapes, usually in monochrome.
followed by recommending a book by Ansel Adams.

(Not disagreeing with you. Adams was a master of large-format photography. Just amused by you badmouthing austere B&W landscapes and then recommending a book by Mr. Austere B&W Landscape himself)
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>131109

i write so sloppily sometimes. It's appalling, given that i'm an English major. i forgot to make a snide joke about them whipping poor adams' corpse like a horse. i also forgot to mention what i meant by california photo club, which is really just snide shorthand for "ansel adams copy machines".

but, yeah. i do recommend the book, just because it's a solid technical source by a trustworthy name. plus, the first book doesn't really go into how to get that ansel adams look. 2 & 3 are reserved for that.
