sup /b/! err .. /p/ :( Since most of you are super nerdy people I figured I would ask you . I have decided to give up one of my hobbies to invest in a better camera for my random UE stuff . I was looking at getting a d40x is it? .. Anyway I was just wondering for a price tag of 1000 what I should consider buying ( doesnt matter if its used ) I have no real knowledge so i do not even know what reviews to look at .

Would suck to lay down 1400 for a new camera just to find out a older model that takes better pictures could of been had used for 600

Pretty much all of the low end DSLRs currently available will give you the same results. D40, D40x, Rebel XT/XTi are all going to be pretty much the same in image quality. Just go to a local store to see which one feels better in your hands.

That would probably be something like the Canon EOS 30D, which I just bought with the 28-138mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens and bunch of accessories for about $1500.

For 1k, buy an entry level DSLR for $500-600 and spend the rest on lenses and accessories. The D40 or the rebel XT (don't waste your money on the XTI, megapixels mean nothing) is fine and you'll have money for a nice second lens.

Also, if you've never owned or used a SLR before, read up on how to use one, unless you're going to only use the point and shoot mode, you're going to need to understand how to manipulated exposure balances.
