hi p/
could you explain me please why is this picture so full of noise?
I'm sorry for the huge size, but I didn't want to resize so you see clearly how dirty it is.
also it's obvious that this shot is just a test shot. I was wondering if the cam would be able to handle low light on city landscape.
so no need to comment about the composition, it's just a crap test shot.

where did I go wrong?

ISO setting?

AFAIK, the higher your ISO speed, the more pixels are substituted with 'noise'.

That, or the place that photo was taken is full of tiny little fairies who wanted into the photo :P

Mind if i expand on your question? Personally i'd like to know if there is a way to stop that 'flarey X' effect you get from street lamps and such?

I love nighttime photography, and want to take a lot of cityscape shot, but the same thing that happened with the street lamp on the photo below always happens.

In advance of what the previous poster was going to say, keep the ISO setting low( and it helps to use the correct film), at something like 100 and leave the exposure at a few seconds. Higher ISOs are made for nighttime shots, but you'll get a lot of noise because the film is so responsive to any kind of light. Stay low to get a good clean shot.

oh crap I messed with the exif when I resized the file.
it was taken with F11 aperture 30 seconds shutter and iso 400. the reason I choosed iso 400, is that even with 30 seconds shutter, it looked like it would come out underexposed with 100 iso, but haven't tryed.
so I should reduce the ISO then. thanks guys.

oh and I dont know about the X lens flare and how to get rid of it but I d like to know.

this noise looks funny...what kind of camera?

next time you post, make sure it has the EXIF in it so we can see what kind of camera, what ISO, shutter, etc and help you out better.

I'm not sure it's possible to stop. I know you can get certain filters which make MORE stars out of lights, but I don't know about going the other way.

OP here, here is the original photo.
exif included, and that noise really doesn't looks like ISO noise which is blue and red and really blur, this one is really sharp. it's awfull, I kinda noticed it on another pics some guys posted about his holidays in prague, I thought his lens was dirty, but now mine is doing the same...
when I choosed my camera I read the reviews and it was supposed to be able to take nice night shots for it's price range, better than canon powershot S3 if I shoot raw, unfortunately I can't shoot raw, beause I can't make my photoshop to read those and I hate those fuji programs..
could it be Jpeg compression? that doesn't looks like it is.

I have one of these cameras and never seen noise like this out of it.

Long exposure noise reduction. I have no idea whether your camera has this feature, but I have a custom function of this type on my 30D. Although, that pollution on your image doesn't remind me of normal noise at all.

that's probably not common noise, I dont think that's dust on the lens either...
I m worried about what it could be now.. :/

here is another pic taken with same exposure, but iso 100 and normal sharpness.

You're right. This isn't common image noise. This is some kind of camera-specific flaw. Crappy sensor or whatever. Wow.

And this is why I refused to buy a cheap camera for my first.

did you try long exposure with your 6500fd? I wonder if it's typical of the model or my camera is defective.

Yes. I do that all the time. At work so I can't show you examples... but I never seen noise like that.

ok thanks.
if you can just post an example of your long shot with exif data so I could check what's wrong with mine.

Two things: One, the long shutter speed and two, the slightly high aperture both together will make weird shit happen. Add in a moderately high ISO (400 iso isn't horrible, but it's higher them you really should have for a 30 second shutter speed shot) and you'll get noise like this everytime, regardless of settings or cleanliness.
