Ok /p/, im into photography for about 9 months now, i haven't taken any kind of classes or bought self help books, i need to know about what i have done till now because the friends who don't know anything about it only say "oooh that's nice"...

What i mean is that i wanna know how i am developing and if im going the right way in photography, I've been lurking around /p/ for long time also and i know how cruel and heartless you are, and i accept it.

here's what i have done till now

most of the people who actually know something aren't cruel and heartless.

i don't think that this was the wisest photo choice to start off with, though--it's grainy and chock full of contrast. going through your flickr, a lot of your photos have great composition and i enjoy the use of crowds throughout. much of it is reminiscent of michael kenna's work, which can be found here: http://www.michaelkenna.net

might provide some inspiration for you, but for now i'd say keep up the good work, and keep on shooting.

OP pic has too much contrast. Highlights blown like fuck and shadows can't see shit. Poor juxtaposition of people too. It would be nice if there was more detail and the guy was alone.

Rest of your pics... holy crap, these are nice. Excellent use of shadows. Especially since it's b/w.

The OP pic is awesome.
>> Anonymous
lots of b/w there...
+side :
-you have an eye for pattern/composition (even though you tend to stick to basics and classical compposition)
-you experimented with every kind of photo type (except macro if i remember well)very eclectic portfolio
-side :
-b/w all the way may be extreme, i can see how it works for many subjects but i believe some of your photo would be better with colors
- somewhat too classical in the composition, as in these pic all seem to have already been taken(a problem i tend to have too)

also : you're on /p, its' all about the gear here ;) what do yo use?
also also : in b4 trolls and kiddies who will criticize you without knowing how to properly use their P&S
also also also : i don't know if this came across but i meant this post to be encouraging, i kinda like your set... sorry to disappoint

OP here,

I just used this photo as a filler, i didn't put it on my gallery because i don't think its good enough, thanks for the reference, im liking his stuff

>>194893
-i used to take colour photos but i followed someone's advice to learn the "structure" of a photo first by taking b&w, then it just grew on me and i found myself exclusively doing it in b&w
- yeah i remember when i started i used to take photos of everything i found bit interesting, now i find myself taking less and less photos, but them being better then the ones i used to take when i started because i feel someone's already taken them...I'm really trying to do something different
also : im not showing you my gear, im showing you my photos :p

I don't think so, why you ask :)

Your work is awesome, OP. The guy above is right that most of your photos have very typical compositions, but you do them well and they still don't seem typical or cliched or whatever. Since we're not busy being dazzled by some weird angle, we can focus on the content. I like that.

Oh, and what part of the world do you live in, OP? Just curious.

your stuff is great.

Good stuff on your flickr. Two pics are really good, ppl running on the bridge and "some legs".
>> Anonymous
Noob here:

I really like your stuff, and it actually inspired me a bit.

Do you add that grain and stuff with photoshop?
I get the idea about shooting in b/w while learning about composition and stuff like that, but do you just add the grain for a cool effect?
And how much grain is "allowed" before it's considered stupid like photoshopped vignetting?

OP here
>>195458
I don't really mess around with photoshop, i mostly shoot on film, rarely on digital
>> Anonymous
>>195469

why all the grain on some pics then? You use 20year old film ?
>> Anonymous
>>195472
bad developing, pushed ISO, shitty scanners, etc.
>> Anonymous
>>195474
Ok

But is adding grain in photoshop "allowed" at all?

If you think you can pull it off in a subtle way that accents and improves the aesthetics of a shot, great. Practice like crazy. Like anything else, though (like vignetting) most people go too far and seem to think it'll "fix" a mediocre photo. No, you need to be using an already good photo, and making minor changes to give it an extra edge.
