SX-70 help Anonymous
Okay guys, I need your help.
I just got a Polaroid SX-70 at an antique shop today. I ran and grabbed a pack of 600 film for it, cut off the two inner "nubs" and popped it in the camera. I pop it in, it ejects the top black frame and everything seems to be goign okay. I know I'll need to put a darker filter on there to compensate for the higher film speed, but for now, I just wanted to play around with it. I depress the shutter, hear the shutter, but the camera does not eject the frame. So, I go to shut the camera, and it ejects a frame. I ended up wasting the whole pack without taking a single picture. I can't figure out why it would be doing that.

Elsa Dorfmann (pic is hers of the poet Allen Ginsberg) would like a word with you.

She shoots exclusively with one of only six 20x24 Polaroid cameras in the world.

Now, what would he then say? "You're partially right there, young man"?
No, seriously. I just want to know why is polaroid better than digital? For example, how is the photo you posted better than the one I posted? (You must think it's good, because otherwise you wouldn't have posted it.)
Do you say that just because she has Name? Or because she photographs with some totally rare camera, which surely makes her photos superb? Or for some other reason?

...would she say... Why there has to be two different words for genders? One word for both would be much easier.

Youve got to remember, Photography is more marketing than anything else, She has her niche, Everyone probably thinks its amazing she can take such good pics (And they are good in terms of lighting) With such an "inferior" camera. Its how she sells / presents the pics afterwards that makes her pictures seem better.

That pic you have is freakishly weird...
Also you need more contrast between the person and the backdrop, Don't use a white shirt if you can help it (unless you are really good with lighting setups). The pose is a little unnatural, But thats more of a taste thing.

It's not a matter of better or worse with normal film versus Polaroid film versus digital. It's just not. Artists use the tools that allow them to make the work they want to make. That's the point.

And OP clearly wanted to use a Polaroid; he bought one.>>76977and you are just totally missing the point.

OP is a chick.
I bought this because it has manual focus and thought it'd be fun to play around with. At the cost of film, though, it's definitely not going to be used regularly. I'll stick to my digital camera for now.

Truth.

I will agree that a digital camera is way better than a Polaroid in all respects but one: You can't take a polaroid picture with a digital camera.

The reason I spend so much on film and film cameras is because it's fun playing around with that stuff, even though I can get as good or better results with a lot less hassle with my digital SLR. A brand-spankin'-new polaroid that takes 600 film with no modifications right out of the box costs something like $30. If the OP really just wanted to use a polaroid because he felt it was better than digital, he'd have gotten one of those. Instead, he bought a fun antique to play around with.

I wouldn't call the 20x24 polaroid "inferior". We're not talking the little 600-film Polaroids you're probably used to. It's one of the largest format film cameras out there.

Okay, it's broken, and I don't want to waste even more money on it than I already have. It expels frames as I open up the camera. I can see nothing through the viewfinder, and the shutter doesn't release. Off to Craigslist with it. Maybe someone else will want it.

If it helps, when I saw the lower lower right picture, I shat bricks.

I shat bricks when I totaled up the amount of money I spent on film and a broken camera. D:

Exactly! Marketing, that's why people think eg. that Dalí is some superior mastermind. Well, that's right, but in the field of promoting himself, not such of an artist. Though, he did some sweet looking pieces. But nothing so special someone else wouldn't be able to do.
Sadly,>>77050is a victim of such marketing.

>>77082
Truth here too. I would photograph also film, if I'd have the money to buy some decent Canon EOS film camera.

But the point was, I'm against any kind of "my dick is better than your's, because my mother, who is like next to god, is using it" bashing.

Dorfman does for-pay-portrait work, but she's primarily an artist, and I don't think her use of the camera in question is some marketing gimmick. It's a large format camera that gives her results she likes; she's written on how she enjoys the whole Polaroid process... describing how the photograph comes out, and she has to squat down to catch it, and so she thinks of the photographs as being "babies." (A little strange, but still.)

I don't think Dorfman "presents" her work in any special way, either.
