'sup /p/

I've decided to put my Canon A710S to better use and get some album cover work done for a friend of a friend, pic related.

What settings would you recommend I use for action shots and action shots in low light?

Or, read a photography book, and this is all you'll ever need.

Why the fuck would you use manual mode when the Basic Zone modes do the calculations for you?

This isn't 1987.

as a guy who still shoots his Canon A80 (four years old this week, actually), I can say with some experience and certainty that M sucks on digital point and shoots. it takes about a thousand clicks to go from 1/1000s to 1/4s, plus a several more for aperture.

A mode + spot metering FTW.

and to op: action shots in low light are a digital p&s' weakest point. there is no good way to do it well without thinking outside of your camera. high iso is unusable, and the small flash only has a good range of about six feet. if you do use the flash, you get the coal miner look (bright subject on a black background) that always looks so rankly amateur. you can either:

1) get some more light. get some worklights, tape some parchment paper to them (parchment paper is used for baking, so it's okay with 400 degree temperatures) to soften the light. or use hard light, to make your band look, you know. edgy. (bad joke)

2) move them outside during the day and give up on dimly lit interiors.

Zone modes? I never knew Ansel Adams programmed autoexposure modes for point and shoots.

The thing with P&S flash is, that you have to make it work as fill flash. I.e. use some other shutter speed than the fixed 1/60.

i'm all for that. but the guy's talking about frozen action, which means that 1/30, 1/4, they're out.

He could slip some poison into the model or subject's drink. A good way to freeze their motion even with a slow shutter speed.

He is? Cause I never seem him mentioning freezing, just shooting action shots.

thanks for your contribution.

ISO400 is usable on a P&S like that if you convert to black and white, I've found. Assuming you know the right way to convert to black and white. Decompose into RGB and use the least-noisy channel.

ISO400 P&S noise can procude quite "authentic" film grain to B/W photos. <3
