i woulda prefered to see the smoker, probably looking like hes taking one last hit with his thumb and middle finger holding the end closer to his mouth, getting ready to flick the cigar away. the man should be wearing a hat, and a trench coat, very humphry bogart lookin.

i think thats whats lacking in this picture, but it might also be whats good about it. it makes you think about whats missing. my thoughts went like this: "wtf, you cant show me a cigar with no person on it? asshole. hm. what would make it look better....., whats missing."

#2 wins big time. Aside from the inclusion of the human subject, the difference in angle on the cigar alone is much more interesting. It makes the object three-dimensional, drawing the eye into the picture. I believe the goal as a photographer is to keep the viewer's eye moving, which this photo does much more than the first.
