Hi /p/

I've not had any experience with cameras, apart from your typical tourist point-and-shoot stuff, but i know i really want to get into photography.

I was thinking about getting a d80 with the 18-200mm VR, as i would be able to grow with this camera as i progress, but now im thinking it's maye stupid to spend so much money on a camera when i have no experience with proper photography. So now im thinking i should maybe just get a d40 with a couple of cheap lenses.
What do you think? Should i spend alot of money on a d80 and a decentish lens or should i buy a d40 with kit lenses for quarter the price then upgrade camera when i feel ready?

VR worthless?? wow...

OP.
get VR.. period.

unless your going to shoot 100% on a tripod, you will find that VR(Nikon) or IS(Canon) is great to have, especially when you start getting up there in focal length.

ITT: since OP is new to the DSLR field he is not sure what he will be spending most of his time shooting, and if image stabilization is an option in lens choice then go for it.

Tripods are generally collapsible, lightweight and portable. If that is too much trouble for you though, then this is always an option:

Do NOT get the 18-135mm!
I have it and I feel sorry for not having bought the 18-200. I never use mine anymore... It's a shit lens with an even shittier quality.

The 18-135 is one Nikon's sharpest zooms. It makes for a good travel lens.

But it's plagued with distortion and cromabs.

oh wow hahahahahahhaha

oh god, hold on

hahahhahahahahahaha

OP, don't get the 18-200. You'll be able to do more (seriously) with a 28, 30, or 35mm, and then a 17, 20, or 24mm.

Aye all education is completely free, all tuition fees are paid by the government. The loan is just a loan, ment for living costs.
You can also get a bursary you never need to pay back, if you're from a low earning house, but the bursary is taken out of the loan.
It's good. If i lived somewhere like the US i would never have been able to go to a decent Uni.
The amount students have to pay down south is ridiculous, people end up paying back student debts for the rest of their life's.

So you prefer the interference of people charged with maximizing the profits of an abstract entity, i.e. giving you as little as they can get away with?

Control is control, interference is interference. Doesn't matter who's doing it, private or public, it's interference. I'd much rather it be a publically accountable body charged with doing nothing for its own sake and the most possible for the people it serves.

Education shouldn't come with a price.

nor should healthcare.
I suppose you could consider National insurance as a fee but i still feel the NHS is worth every penny.

since this thread is already derailed I'll jump in also.

paying for healthcare and life insurance is like gambling that your going to die or get sick.

I say just dont get sick and save yourself alot of money.

oh yea, don't die wither.

I really don't mind paying it. Everyone should be entitled to healthcare, even those who can't afford it. If achieving this means giving up a small percentage of my income then i really don't mind.
My dads aortic valve ruptured a couple of years ago and he had to have major surgery, he was in a comma for a month after the operation. His heart stopped 3 times during the surgery, 3 times the doctors and nurses got his heart beating again thus saving his life 3 times. He's been on antibiotics and other drugs since then, lord knows how much that would have cost. I don't mind contributing a bit of my wages towards that, i might be in his position one day.

I think you can get away with saving some cash bu going with a SB-400. Its really all you need, but eh, everyone has an opinion.
The f/1.8 is a nice pick, OP. A fantastic, fast, sharp and inexpensive lens.
18-200 VR is quite lovely. You could perhaps do with an older zoom lens and save money.
And the 55-200 covers that range with the kit lens, and at a third of the cost ($250 with VR, $200 without I believe)
I love the instant manual override the 18-200 gives though.
But your set up is quite nice, no real complaints here.
