My birthday is coming up in a few weeks and I have the option of receiving a lens as a gift for my Canon Digital Rebel. Currently I have the 18-55 kit lens and the 85 1.8. I really like prime lenses (I've borrowed my friend's 50 1.4), and was wondering how the 28 1.8 fares, as I want a wider angle; the 85 is just way too tight for taking anything other than portraits.

Any suggestions or thoughts on the lens or other lenses would be much appreciated.

Pic unrelated, just a crappy unedited photo while I was hiking in a National Park with my friend's 50 1.4.

50mm F1.8 is good and cheap, but I personally find it too narrow very often myself. I'm considering getting the 28 1.8 too.

Your best bet to see if it's worth it is to look up
1) pictures taken with it
2) pictures taken by film fags with 50mm lenses and see if that looks like what you'd like your pictures to look like (since the 28mm is going to look almost like a 50mm on your digital)

There's a very noticable difference between a 44.8mm equivalent and a fifty.
