Sup /p/.

I'm torn between getting the Nikon D40x and the Cannon EOS-400D.

I'm a fanboi of neither, as this is my first DSLR.

I'm aware of the crapness of the kit lens on both models, but unfortunatly, my budget doesnt extend to a better lens at this point in time.

So far, the only thing thats swinging the balance in one particular direction is the fact that the Cannon has more physical buttons for speed of controling its features.

I'm planning on using it primarily to document my last year of University work.. which is building a stage lighting design portfolio. So for me, being able to capture different light levels accuratly is the most important feature.

I'd greatly appreciate any tips/suggestions.
Also, if there are any Britfags around I'd appreciate hearing about any good retailers.
(Especially if theres bundles about with better lenses around the £500 mark)

Disclaimer: I'm a canon fanboy.

Another advantage of the 400D is the ability--if you do eventually plan to get another lens--to fully use the entire catalog of Canon's EF lenses. If you're going to be taking pictures of things in dark theaters, the ability to get a fast 50mm f/1.8 prime lens that'll autofocus is a good thing.

(The D40x can mount Nikon's 50mm f/1.8, but it won't autofocus)

If you do decide to go the Nikon route, however, I'd recommend the D40 instead of the D40x. The extra pixels don't really buy you that much.

Get the D40 or the EOS 350 as the advantages of the x or 400 are not worth the extra poundage and with the money you save you can get a cheap prime.

The A100 Sony outperforms both but at that price you probably cant get one or just the 18-70 kit lense (which is also the best kit lense out there).

London Camera Exchange, Jessops and Jacobs are the only decent retailers.

If I see that fucking nikon one more time!

Buy the one that fits your hands better.
Canon 400D is slightly more functional and can use all Canon EF lenses, but more expensive.
Nikon D40 is cheaper, slightly less functional and has restrictions on which Nikon lenses it can use.
Nikon D40x is just D40 with extra megapixels you don't need. Why pay more?

Also, there's Pentax K100D and Olympus E-510, which are fine too, but you'll be more limited in the choice of lenses/accessories.

so, difference between eos-350d and 400d..

400d is 10mp, 305d is 6.something amirite?
Or is there anything else fairly major missing?

Will check out LCE and Jacobs. Unfortunatly, my local Jessops staff suck balls.. Shop guy thought the camera was broken when the lcd said "Light level too low" and wouldnt take a photo... forgetting to remove lens cap.. *facepalm*

There are actually a bunch of advantages to the 400D over the 350D. Most important is that the controls on the 400D are a bit easier to use--setting ISO and whatnot on the 350D requires an extra confirmation step that the 400D doesn't.

Additionally, the 400D has:
1. More autofocus points
2. Mostly--but not entirely--worthless sensor cleaning system
3. Larger shooting buffer
4. Bigger LCD
5. RGB histogram in playback available
6. MOAR MEGAPIXZULS!!1!

Amazon review sums it up the d40/d40x well enough. My biased opinion says to take the canon.

"You want a camera for sports or telephoto shots of nature. This is not the camera for you, and here is why: the D40 has a DIFFERENT lens mount than every other Nikon DSLR which came before it. To save costs, Nikon left an autofocus driver out of the camera body, which means you must buy special/more expensive add-on lenses with the autofocus driver built into the lens itself.

Why is this significant? Because of the 200 lenses made for Nikon DSLRs by Nikon, Sigma, Tokina, and others, only 20 or so work with the D40 with autofocus - something most amateurs will need to shoot sports and day to day photos. Many of Nikon's own consumer grade lenses, such as the 70-300mm G Zoom (Street price $150), will not autofocus with the D40. As a practical matter, this means that if you want an autofocus lens to shoot junior playing soccer, you must spend $525 for a zoom lens, the fantastic, yet pricey Nikon 70-300mm VR Zoom. That is almost as much as what you paid for the camera itself. The D40 is significantly limited in the number of lenses it will accept, and you really need to think about these limitations before purchasing. Moreover, what if your intentions change and want to pick up a cheap zoom for occasional use? With the D40, you can't, and I really think this is a significant limitation on this camera."

350D is 8MP, 400D is 10MP. But don't worry about megapixels, even 6MP is enough if you don't print posters.

I belive you can order online at jessops and jacobs and pick up in store which should remove the inept cretins they generally use for staff.

Also go into store and fondle:

Canon
Nikon
Sony
Olympus
Pentax

So you know which is the most comfortable for you, THEN decided which one to get.

Yep:
Rebel = KISS Digital = EOS 300D
Rebel XT = KISS Digital N = EOS 350D
Rebel XTi = KISS Digital X = EOS 400D
(In North America, Japan, and Everywhere Else, respectively)

6MP is enough to print posters, too.
