hey there /P/

so I just ordered a used 20d, got a pretty good deal on it. It was a backup body at a local portrait studio and they gave it to me for 500 bucks, and now i'm looking for some acessories to go with it. I got a 256mb cf card laying around, so i'll slap that in for now. But basically i'm thinking of getting the new 18-55IS lens (no, not the kit lens) since it has had some pretty freaking good reviews, and possibly a 50mm 1.8? My budget is pretty much exausted, but I want to make sure i'm not forgetting anything major. I've also debated getting some shitty chinese extension tubes off ebay to fuck around with, never messed with that before.

Assuming you are just starting into this:

Other than maybe the 50mm if you want a quality lens for low light and portraits on the cheap, I'd say stick with what you have for now. Don't go crazy with it buying accessories you don't need or you'll risk wasting money. You have plenty to learn with for now with the body and the 18-55mm IS.

If you are feeling adventurous later you can always add more and try things like reversing rings to make a ghetto macro lens set up and extension tubes, but you don't need it to get started. I'm not sure about the quality of those either, it can vary a lot with the no-name Chinese stuff. Some of it is good for the money and some is awful even at a low price. I can't tell you anything much about that one pictured, sorry.

If you are really short of money, then just get the zoom and learn with that and you can get the 50mm prime later if you want.

I have that set of tubes, they're great if you don't mind the lack of auto-exposure. Also, you have to use a lens with an aperture ring if you want to shoot at tnything other than f/22. They do a great job, slap a 50mm on those and have some fun. If you like macro and have the money, get a proper macro lens like the Tamron 90mm.
