Hey guys. Anonymous
It's me again.
Still not being a tripfag.
Have some new pictures though.
No 11x14 this time, but I hope you still enjoy.

This seems to be too dark, and I'm a bit turned off by the floating hand. The jacketed arm seems to just disappear. Just me though.
>>198893
Nice photo, although you're doing yourself a disservice by posting him. He's not extremely interesting to look at.
Overall good stuff. Keep it up!

Why is medium format so delicious?
>> Anonymous

>>198910
Cuz it's a big fucking chunk of Neopan behind ancient Zeiss glass.
Thats why.
>> Anonymous
Very nice. What gear, OP?
>> Anonymous
>>198912
Only the best type of delicious. This photo is awesome.
>> Anonymous
These are pretty cool.

My favorites in order of best first:

>>198896

Nice balance. I like the background and it and the subject look interesting. It helps that she's looking into the lens with an odd sort of expression.

>>198887

Odd pose and stance, but he's weird enough to make it worth while. I am not too sure about the background though, I think I like it, but there's something niggling me I may pick up later.

>>198889

Interesting. The view is forced onto he due to the framing and simple background. It's not bad, but I feel it is lacking something to make it great.

>>198893

Nicely composed, but the subject isn't doing anything interesting and doesn't look interesting on his own like that. Needs something to spice it up.

>>198891

Too dark and confused. The subject is lost in it all.

Zeiss Super Ikonta BX.
Neopan, and Acros in XTol. One of them is Tri-X @ 1600 in Diafine. (The 'too dark' one, it was a night shot.)

"Odd pose odd stance" is a very beautiful young polish girl.
I don't know what kind of guys you hang out with but...
>> Anonymous
>>198923

Here again.

>>198912

That is my new second favorite. Shove the rest down a space for it. Expression really makes it, but the pose and composition is nice too. It doesn't distract from her.
>> Anonymous
Too tired to crit now, but are you also also the guy who assembled 135 strips into a film holder for 4x5 and shot like that?

Amazing exposure on all of these. Really, the technical skill is extremely good.

Your composition and choice of subject is boring as fuck though. Generic hipsters that could come from virtually any big city, with a single subject dead in the fucking center of the frame in 5 out of 7 photos is pretty bad.

Just because you have a nice camera and know how to use a light meter doesn't make these images good, it just means you'll blind most people into thinking there's more here than there actually is.

No matter how good you are with your tools, perfectly exposed medium format snapshots are still just snapshots.

>>198893
Second favorite. It's a well balanced comp.

>>198887
I like the background in this.

>>198925
Second favorite.

Unfortunately, these are all much less interesting than your previous stuff. I have the feeling that you're relying too heavily on your interesting gear and style too much and it's holding you back from pushing yourself. Still solid stuff though.

Very nice shots.

They have a really unique filmish look. Is it possible to replicate this with a DSLR?
>> Anonymous
>>199048
That's more the really old Zeiss lens than film.
>> Anonymous
>>199054
Not entirely, good luck getting DOF and highlight control like that with a digital sensor.
The optics have a hand in it, but not as much as you might think.
If you can get the DOF right (Wide open on a longer lens pulled back a ways maybe?) and have a good enough raw file to work (read highlights completely under control) then you have a chance to get it this way through some proper adjustments.

Getting the straight curve of digital into the right perfect S would be kind of a bitch, but can't be that hard, what with photoshop being photoshop and all.
>> Haddock !!xREx2m9lgBs
Enjoyed all of these, especially the first shot.

Goddamnit I need to get a decent MF camera.
>> Anonymous
>>199055
I don't really understand this film/digital curve stuff at all. Do you have a link that I could read up on?

>How do you feel about August Sander?

Brilliant photographer.
However the images of his that I've seen were better composed and had more interesting subjects than these.
Whether they are or not, the majority of these come off as "Pictures Of My Buddies" since everyone seems to be from the same urban hipster social demographic. I'd suggest branching out and doing some street portraits of people you don't know.

And, of course, Sandler was doing most of his work in the early half of the last century, and what worked then won't necessarily work now.
>> Anonymous
>>199120
>i am new, i lurk, what is a tripfag?

tripfags are ppl who are arrogant. think that there name is important and must be with there photos. usually ppl who think they are better than they really are.

Oh god.
Oh jesus christ.
Ok, so this is awful as sin, but... Well... From a *commercial* standpoint I actually like this.

You've somehow managed to remove all artistic merit that the photo had, but suddenly it looks like something I could imagine seeing in an Urban Outfitters catalog, which is something I never would have thought if I had just looked at the B&W photo.

>>199268

Sorry, I didn't mean that the technique was awful as sin, just... This style is kinda ghey and early-80s. Very pop-art, and very not-what-/p/-likes.

How's the studio art major treating you?
I'm in art school debt as well, though mine is a result of an MFA in Design that I didn't actually need and that I don't use at all.

>>199281

well ive managed to get work into galleries (i know, im shit, can you believe it) and i do run a dot com website which i sell my work on (your not gonna see it though)..

Hopefully im gonna sleaze my way into some sort of gallery management job, 80s style.
>> Anonymous
>>199284
>Hopefully im gonna sleaze my way into some sort of gallery management job, 80s style.

+10 A.P. (Awesome Points) for the reference.

Good luck with the gallery thing. Unfortunately those jobs are REALLY hard to get, since you're competing with basically every Art History major ever, and also a fair number of Curatorial Practice & Fine Art majors.

Have you thought about going commercial?
Small web companies always need commercial photographers to take photos of the shit they're selling. If you freelance it could be an easy way to make a few bucks on the side.
>> BurtGummer
>>199293

I know this is sacriligeous in here, and ill probably be branded a tripfag heathen forever, but, photography isnt my main interest..

shitstorm..

ive actually come to the conclusion that there are people out there who are massively more talented at painting/photography/illustration than i am, and so id rather TRY to manage them INTO the art world, and maybe do some of my own work on the side...

The aim is to be dead equal to saatchi within 10 years... lol
>> Anonymous
>>199298
Saatchi has zero taste. If you're going to be an art pimp, at least pimp meaningful art that actually addresses the human condition instead of trying to make snarky-bleak-cute statements and as a result megabucks.

Photography isn't my main interest, either; literature is. I picked it up on the side because (lol pretension, I know now) the poet Allen Ginsberg did photography on the side, and took to it pretty well.
