Hey everyone. I'm looking to get a fixed lens for my D40, mainly the 50mm f/1.8 one Nikon produces. Here's the link...

http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/ProductDetail.page?pid=2137

From my understanding it is a great lens for its price. I'm really just wanting to see what you guys think about future updates. Do you think Nikon has an AF-S model coming out soon or should I go ahead and grab this one? Autofocus isn't a huge deal, but I'm sure it'd be nice to have. I just don't want to wait for ever for one. Or what do you think an AF-S model would run if they release it? I could just get this one for now and upgrade later. Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks!

Every one should have this lens in their kit. It's inexpensive and the quality is great.
Can't autofocus on your D40? Too bad. Learn2manualfocus.

If Nikon does come out with a 50mm AF-S you can bet your ass it will cost much more.

No clue about an AF-S 50/1.8 from Nikon, but there's a 50/1.4 from Sigma coming out in the not too distant future (i.e., announced, not yet shipping, no price details yet) that might work for you if you can stomach the wait (and probably higher price. I'm guessing around the $200-$300 range, though keep in mind that that's a total ass-pull)

Anyone got suggestions about good, inexpensive lenses for a Pentax?

I doubt Nikon will release an AF-S version of this lens anytime soon. For the price, grab it now, it's too good of a lens to pass up.

Manually focusing on a D40 isn't as much of a pain as people put it out to be.

or you can get http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=152&modelid=7306 before it's too late. it's retarded not to have autofocus on every body that accepts the lens...

yes it is, viewfinder is too dark indoors and other situations that call for f1.8
>> noko
OP should try the lens out in practice before buying one just to be sure the ease of manual focusing is what was expected.

Else there's always the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, only fast prime that'll AF on the D40 as far as I know

I'm in exactly the same position as OP, recently got a D40, looking at getting a cheap 50mm f/1.8 for it. eBay seems to have more than enough. For me manual focusing is more of a way of life than an issue - the only thing to be aware of is that the lens should still be a Nikkor AF - otherwise the metering won't work (not something I'll put up with).

Also - the extra cost of the Sigma mentioned above, with its lower build quality clarity, should rule it out. Unless, that is, you can't manually focus due to some medical condition...

ZOMG focus confirmation light not right enough!

Without going into all the mechanics (because I don't know them), the older manual focus lenses don't have the right coupling to give the D40 what it needs to meter. While the (less old) AF lenses do. But they still won't actually AF on the D40 unless they're an AF-S or AF-I, neither of which fit into this thread.

Ken Rockwell has the detail: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/d40-performance.htm#lenses

Surely everyone here loves Ken and the D40? ;)

lol actually, i re-read what you said before and realized that you were talking about MF lenses not metering. I think it reflects that i wasn't concentrating enough to even read a simple sentence lol.

anyway, i've spent the past few days with a lens that wont meter on my D70, its not as bad as you may think.

Man, that's really a kick in the dick. Can't get autofocus on a 50/1.8 with the D40 anyway, so why not just get a much cheaper manual focus 50/1.8? Because Nikon arbitrarily strips you of your meter if you do. Fuckin' harsh.

Might as well ask here rather than create another pointless gear thread. Which bodies can meter with old Nikon lenses? It seems the consumer and prosumer line can't but I heard the high end line (D*00) can. Is this true?

D200 and above.

Can I use newer F mount lenses on older F mount film bodies? Of course I don't expect them to autofocus but the lenses will be usable right? DX seems out of the question.

Yes you can, and DX lenses will actually work - they'll just project a circle into the middle of the frame, and leave black edges.

Like the other guy said, yeah.

There's also the issue of G-series lenses. If they don't have an aperture ring on the lens, they're stuck at their max aperture on any camera that doesn't have in-body aperture control.
