If I am correct and Nyquist is the theoretical maximum resolution that a given sensor can produce (generally in MTF), then we have two basic scenarios:
1. Nyquist is higher than actual achieved resolution. We need better lenses to get more "true" resolving power.
2. Nyquist is equal to or lower than actual achieved resolution (false detail). We need higher resolution sensors to get more "true" resolving power.
In virtually all cases with modern high-megapixel sensors, the Nyquist value that results is higher than the actual resolving results. This is an indication that the sensor out-resolves the lens, and that increasing megapixels will not improve capture quality.
Naturally, this is an approximate and incomplete explanation as there are a couple things influenced by sampling and some assumptions made, but as far as I can tell it is generally true.
