Yo, /p/, bros.

I want to make the purchase of a manual SLR camera for beginners. Preferably for nature photography.

Any suggestions?

Canon AE-1 Program, that is.

Maybe an old Minolta manual camera. They have the nice advantage that their lenses mount remained even more constant than Nikon's for longer, but that nobody uses them anymore because the company went out of the camera business and had mostly switched over to a completely different autofocus mount anyway by the time they did.

These combine to mean that there are a lot of lenses out there, and they're very cheap. I got a 50mm f/1.4 for my Minolta for $20.

yeah the minolta's are overlooked, maybe that can play an advantage.

also, the Nikon will mount and operate ANY F mount lens, except for G type as they lack the aperture ring.

It's Leica or nothing.

Nikon FM-10

Cheap, Reliable, Durbale, and TONS of useful little bits to buy for it.

>Expensive, unpredictable, weak, and it can't be used with anything modern
fixed

I got one as my first slr camera, and the fucking shutter got stuck after a week. I sent if back to Nikon for the repair and lasted nearly two years of daily use until I bought my F100. I'm quite sure the only reason it lasted that long is because of the way I baby my equipment. It's modern plastic crap in disguise of a great camera, the F2.
Here's a tip. If you really get into photography don't invest too much money in old shit. I'm still trying to use the AIS lens I bought in my everyday photography, but AF is so goddamn convenient.

Get an old F2 off ebay

My AE-1P came in the mail today. Where the hell do I find a battery for this thing?

That reminds me I have an Extra FM-10 and Black EM.
Anyone need one?

I got a battery for my ae-1 at a local camera store. If it's the same, it's a pretty common 6 volt battery.

the FE10/FM10 is Nikon's lowest SLR camera of their entire range, what did you expect? How can you compare it to their professional F2?

The FE10/FM10 was designed as a total entry level camera at an affordable cost for new.

by price

The question was not let's "compare manual cameras", it was "what's a good manual slr for beginners". And an F2 is a much better choice for the price.

>for new.

And what's the point of that?

any manual camera you buy from the 80's is going to be great. you're buying from an era when design and functionality were at a peak. really, it was one of the few golden eras in photography where you almost couldn't go wrong by buying one of the big five brands.

still, i throw my vote in for Nikon FE2 or F3, or a Minolta X700. The X700 is usually cheaper, since it was so ridiculously ubiquitous. And, as ac mentioned, minolta lenses can be had for even cheaper. i bought a rokkor 28 2.8 for like, 45 bucks 7 years ago, before film was "dead" and everyone still bought film slr's.

i'm not saying OP should buy one new, i was pointing out that it was designed as an affordable camera hence the worlds of difference between that and the F2.
I had an FE10, its absolutely nothing compared to my F5, but i still feel its a great little camera and i do recommend it, perhaps not new, but if you can find a good priced second hand one, i say why not? ^_^

Spoilers: FE10/FM10 are chinons, I wouldn't buy one new, personally.

They're Cosinas.

I don't trust the FM10, but I haven't actually touched one. Meanwhile, I've played with the Epson RD-1 (digital rangefinder based off the FM10 chassis) and oh god it's so beautiful.

I have a feeling we're all just metal camera elitists deep down inside and that makes us suggest the pro models, but the FM10 should be just fine too. Logically.

Chinon had some nice cameras before Kodak bought them.

I mean it works, but there's no point in Nikon continuing to make a bottom-basement film SLR when you can get an F2 or something like that for the same price on e-Bay. I wasn't looking at it so much from the point of "what camera to buy" but "what's the point of producing more fully manual film SLRs when there's a bajillion better and cheaper ones floating around out there?"

i used an FM10 for years before i got my D40, i still use and love it :)
