Had a big hands on session yesterday with my friends Canon 5D and 50mm f1.2.
Fantastic combo for low light, takes fantastic pictures, the RAW image out of the camera is great, and the lens is awesome.
$4000 (CAD) kit.

Basically this thread is just an excuse to post this pic.
5D body annoyed me but I won't go into details on that.

Usually when you talk about the awesomeness of a camera, you refer to the ability to take pictures, not the ability to use it as a prop in a photo.

Pics or it's just an expensive necklace.

I don't have the pics, shes got them on her computer. My pic was just a snapshot since all of the good pics of her were taken with her camera.

Didn't like the 5D's AF points, and cycling through them, The top jog dial and ISO settings and shit like that is really akward since you can't keep a finger on the shutter release.
Menu was a pain when I had to dive into it. And i'm not sure what type of shell they have on the inside but it felt really plastic on the outside.
Seems feature retarded comparing it to the pro line Canon stuff.

When you make your livelihood, you don't choose the brand that offers an equivalent, even similar system, you choose the brand that is a trustworthy and time-tested tool. Thus, Nikon. There are always distinctions to be made between Nikon and Canon, but I've often heard this statement, and I believe it: Canons are the best cameras made by engineers, but Nikons are the best cameras made by photographers. It's a generalization, but that feels very true to me.

i still lol at this. the best sensors still belong to Canon. The lens quality though goes to Nikon.

>> Anonymous

It is entirely possible to mount an F-mount lens on an EOS body.
>> Anonymous
The more I've seen of the two systems in recent years, the less there is between them. Granted there are personal preferences and specific situations and set ups you can find for one to have the edge over the other, but they are both good overall. Unlikely to be a limitation anyone here or worth worrying about.

yea, though honestly the only lens id bother with is their 50 1.2 simply cos its damn cheap compared to the canon.
other than that i personally think canon has lenses hands down.

also, vincent, what brand of body are you using? i though most of the high end canons(20D, 30D, 5d, 1dmkii(?)) had the same menu setups so wouldnt you be used to it already?

The 50mm f1.2 however is absolutely amazing. Nikon really needs an af-s equivalent.

I'm more comparing to the D200 that is also 3 years old. Being that I have had tons of time to get a feel for the D200, and the camera's are similar in their placement in the Brand's lineup.
>> Anonymous
Last time anyone checked, the D200 wasn't the most stellar example in image quality. And is missing a pretty big part of the 'thing' that makes a 5D a 5D.

>> Being that I have had tons of time to get a feel for the D200

You can't give any camera fault because you have more experience with another one.

>> the camera's are similar in their placement in the Brand's lineup.

The D200 was introduced at $1,700 and the 5D at $3,000.

Nikon and Canon do not have directly competing models.
>> Anonymous
>>190676
he said in similar positions in each brands lineup. meaning they are both considered 1 step down from each brand's top camera. Also, i do not think he was referring to the image quality of the 5D but other things, such as ergonomics, menu set up, and whatever other features.
>> Anonymous
>>190682

Canon's menu on the old cameras was crap, but the image quality was excellent. I know image quality matters more to me as no one gives a shit about menus in the final image. Even better is that now they've used the Canon pro style menus in all the new cameras.

50/1.2 actually has a great flaw, because it front element doesnt extend while focusing, like the 85/1.2 so if you stop it down even a bit, the focus will be off. (front or backfocus)

Canon decided to go a little cheaper there.
>> Anonymous
>>190876
yea that seems to be a well known flaw of this lens, personally thats not whats stopping me, its more the fact that the image quality hardly justifies it over the 1.4 version.
> OH, that and the 5x price difference over the 1.4 >_<
