good introductory DSLRs.. Anonymous
/p/,

i know you probably get bombed by newfags with threads like these, but bear with me. I need a DSLR or some camera to take high quality photographs for on-site fieldwork that I have to do for some classes. I'm studying architecture, so that should clarify it a bit.

I have no experience with photography so, any advice is good. What starter kits/resources are available out there to take good quality photographs? I know how to distinct between a good vs. bad picture, but don't know how to distinguish between how to take a good vs. bad one.

I was looking into this camera.

before the canon/nikon fags tell you to buy a F5, just let it be known that any DSLR within the same price range as the other ones WILL BE ROUGHLY THE SAME.

Sony's line (A100, A200, A300/350 A700) all have all the bells and whistles thrown in with every lens (image stabilization, auto focus with every lens, metering with ever lens, etc.)

For the prosumer, i would check out the Sonys, but like i said, every camera in a price bracket is going to be more of less the same.

Nah, im bored of blatently promoing sony, there isnt as much need now they have more than one body.

Besides there is no official tiltshift for the mount, only some old random party one. I'd imagine you want 1.0x crop to get super wide too, the A900 aint out yet either.

5D + TS = win.

5D + tiltshift = more expensive than a 4x5 = lose by a stretch.

Hm. I wonder how cheaply Canon or Nikon could make a tilt-shift for a crop sensor. Seems like it's just be a matter of taking any of their non-tilt-shift, non-crop lenses and putting a few hinges on it, since they already project a larger image circle than the sensor sees...

Unless you're looking to specifically get into photography perhaps a DSLR isn't for you. There's lots of very high quality P&S's out there. For architecture you generally need a wide angled lens and they're usually pretty expensive.

i dunno if it's worth bothering. most of a tilt-shift lens' cost comes from all the precision gearing in the first place. they could cut corners on the glass, but a sloppily geared lens could be more trouble than it's worth. and then there's the whole economy of scale in the first place. i don't know if there's enough demand to manufacture these things on a large scale (and thus drive down prices).

Get an IXUS 860 or a Panasonic FX55.
Both are 28mm.
