A serious question here - I currently have a Canon 30D along with a 70-200 F/4 L and a EF-S 17-85mm lens. I want to sell my EF-S 17-85 and hopefully I can obtain one good 28mm f1.8 or 1.4 But I don't know how much I should be selling the 17-85 for... It's fairly new, no older than 5 months. Suggestions?

You couldn't GIVE that lens away.
>> Anonymous
Yeah you could. GIVE IT TO ME

the 17-85 is $500ish new, so somewhere between $250-400ish depending on condition.

thats not the 18-55mm we're talking about :p

Alright, thank you.

Uh, are you sure you want to get rid of the 17-85? A 28mm prime without any alternatives in the <70mm range can be quite limiting.

Well, it isn't as sharp as I would like for it to be. Does anybody knows of any sharp lens prime or zoom in that range then?

Are you sure you NEED a 28 mm prime that's f/1.8 or less? The current lens you have right now is f/4-5.6. I wouldn't expect it to be very fast. But I woudldn't go to the opposite extreme to f/1.4 either. I purchased an EF 28mm f/2.8 for about 100 USD. It is awesome and win.

You might try Tamron 17-50/2.8, it's sharper and faster, but you'll lose IS.

As for primes, going from a long slow zoom to a single fast prime will require a complete rethinking of most photography techniques you use. So I think you'd better get a cheaper prime and keep your 17-85 for versatility, as>>83014said.

And this is a bad thing why?

It's not bad, it's just OP might not realize the difficulties.

I guess I would look around a little more and see what my options are. Thank you very much for your assistance. I'll be back with the decision that I make by then. In that case - enjoy a picture I took in Africa with my 70-200L lens.

See girls. Spend 30 second to convince girls to pose. Take picture.

"Spending 2 minutes to grab a new lens from the bag, change lens, and store the old lens" just does not fit in the time budget.

Fixed lenses are OK for architecture, though. But then, my Tamron 17-50 2.8 is as sharp (or sharper) than the Canon primes. I take a lot more (and better) pictures since I left all the crap home and only carry this lens on the camera. Plus, it's light, so I take the camera instead of not taking it.

I'd be tempted to go with the Canon 17-55mm. It really is superb optically.

If it takes you 2 minutes to change lenses, you have an issue. Granted, zooms can be nice for working with fast moving scenes, but it should take 20 seconds tops to change lenses if you need to. Besides, with a prime lens you just use your feet to zoom and a lot of lens changes become unnecessary. I manage to shoot 99% of what I do with a 24mm prime on a dSLR or an 80mm prime on a 6x6 body, and I don't feel limited by it. It's just a matter of practice.

Using your feet to zoom isn't always practical, is slower, makes you more likely to be noticed and ruin a moment and moving closer with a wide doesn't make the same image as zooming in.

Primes are great for their purpose, but this "foot zoom" crap being a viable alternative is ridiculous. Zooms aren't there just because people are "lazy".
