Advice? Anonymous
Hey /p/,

I've been into photography for about 6 months now, and am wanting to learn more!

How does one get the sort of colour/contrast like in the pic i uploaded?

Is it in the camera, the film, a filter?

Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.

yeah, photoshop is a much more exact way to manipulate colors and levels, but it'll look artificial if you're trying to come up with something special.

Lighting. It's all about lighting. You're either about an hour from sunset or after sunrise. It's exposed for the guys face...a wide aperture, about f/8 or so. Probably low ISO...100-300.

Knowing color theory well is important too. For example, if you wanted red to stand out it's a good idea to add blue, the opposite color, because it'll contrast with the red. Adding red would just drown out the color you want.

That looks like natural light from an overcast day. Either that or a masterfully softboxed strobe at high camera right. I doubt it though. It's a nice lens, too, that always helps. It's been slightly desaturated too, leading to the soft pastel colors. It's also possible there was someone to the left with a white reflector for some of that fill on his body.

Looks like the kind of light you get on an overcast day, nothing fancy. It's more of what you do with the light that matters.
