Alright /p/, holidays are coming and the fam has indicated that a DSLR stands to be under the tree this year. I've been using a loaner D40x from school, but noodled with a Rebel XT in my free time and like it a little more. Then I read about the 18-55 IS lens, which still has the same build quality issues as the non-IS lens but has IS, which really seems to help from the test shots I found.

I shoot a lot of robots, particularly FIRST Robotics Competition ones (big, fast, swinging arms that would kill a tripod, reflective number decals that prohibit flash); generally, robots or not, I prefer to shoot freehand with available light. Mostly for the web, but occasionally printed.

This leads to three paths:

-Rebel XT with the 18-55 (3.5-5.6) IS lens ($587.27 on Amazon)
-Rebel XTi with the standard 18-55 kit lens ($629.94 on Amazon)
-Some other combo that my n00b self hasn't found. ($650 is about the upper limit.)

What would anonymous do?

Pic obviously related.
