What part do you have a problem with?
The broken part is the crown, and the yellow part is the root.

Its just decayed a little, maybe the op should learn how to brush.

Thats not a tooth, its a rock.

man, I am surprised you could even have that thing in your mouth.
I've seen an abscess before and that one would have caused extreme pain (not to mention a brain infection had it gone far enough).

I've got a worst case scenario for ya. Really strong bones, and bad teeth. Last extraction, the molar wouldn't come out easily, and as such it broke off the crown before it would come out. Dentist had to cut the root in half to remove the rest. After a few weeks healing, I had to remove a remaining chunk of my frigging jaw bone from the extraction site, manually.

Not fun. But at least I got some hillbilly heroin (despite little to no pain after the lidocaine wore off). On that note, they also accidentally injected the lidocaine directly into the nerve. Felt like they were spraying boiling water on my tongue until it kicked in.

Oh, and for reference, it's possible to have bad teeth no matter how well you take care of them. Why do you think there's still dentists to this day?

You must be westerner, too much sugar in your diet. Root canal and cap is the way to go.

Floss + brush + half yearly dental checkup = Win.

Jesus. I need to go to the dentist.

How about having four teeth taken out in one go?

...In preparation for braces.

I saw one guy who hadn`t seen a dentist for 20 years. He had shitload of cavities(most needing root canal therapy), missing teeth(front and back) and dirty brown teeth. I gave him three choices 1. do nothing and suffer 2. extract all and dentures 3. spend 15 grand and walk away with a bright clean winning smile. He chose 3. and six months later was very happy indeed. He now comes twice a year for a checkup.

I think often it's the thought that they'll find something terribly wrong with my teeth that either requires surgery/money that keeps me away.

Vicious cycle really.

Root canal = $1000
Post (necessary after root canal) = $2000
Crown = $2000

OR

Tooth extraction = $500

Do the math. Plus, most insurances only cover anything besides extraction on the front teeth. Molars are rarely covered at all. And if they *do* cover that other stuff, it'll only be a portion (like 50%.) If the insurance covers it all, chances are that insurance is $10,000 a year anyway.

I thought it was some sort of squid thing from the thumbnail

You must live in the states...

80% is like the minimal coverage in Canada, I think I paid 167$ total for getting 4 wisdom teeth pulled, and that was an orthodontic surgeon, not just a dentist.

What the hell sort of insurance do you have? I was charged $800 for an in-office cleaning and wisdom tooth removal at an Ontario dentist.

Whereas in Japan, I paid just over $150 total for root canal, post, crown, several fillings, cleaning, x-rays.
