If you really want to get into photography, pick up a good book that discusses composition, aperture, shutter speed, etc. and has some samples of work from the greats.You're not going to learn a lot from a point and shoot...
I completely agree, finding a good book really helped me. I do it for fun but still... knowing a little about it made me take a little more pride in it.
