Im looking for a cheap system camera(my first one)
And the choise is between Nikon D50 and Pentax K100D (Eos 350D/400D is not an option, its way to small for my hands). The girl in the photo store I talket to said that I should take the one that felt best i my hands, but they both feel good.
The obvious take is?
>> I'm completely biast towards Nikons Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
NEITHER, find yourself a cheaper deal on a D70s!!!

If you wanna stick with a D50 (great starter dSLR) then make sure you DO NOT get the 18-55 kit lens with it. get the 18-70mm that comes with the D70s, much better starter lens.

What are you wanting to shoot anyway?

>>30986
I want to shoot street photos. Animals, buildings, people out on the streets.

>>30986
Ouch, the D70s is to expensive >.<
>> Anonymous
in any case go for the nikon over the pentax. it has much more support and so it will have a longer lifespan than the pentax of the same price.

the general rule is buy canon or nikon.
>> PORTRAITS! Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>30988

Oh, it's out of your budget? Just so you know, most of the money will be spent on buying lenses, cause that's what costs money, bodies are nothing compared to setups such as external flashes combined with primes and super zooms.

If people and general shooting is what you're after then go with the 18-70mm, great lens considering it's not deemed as fast.

Start saving money, get a 50mm f/1.8D, cheap but great for portraits and 'people' shots.

Just to tell you again, buying the D50 and the 18-70mm WILL NOT BE THE END OF IT... do not buy the SLR if you're not prepared to fork out thousands for lenses down the track.

If you're not that committed or dont want to spend that much money just get a Fuji Finepix, great Point and Shooter but still have features like RAW and manual settings.

>>30992
Thats why i dont want to buy such an expensive camera. Because that way I have money for a good lens.
>> PORTRAITS! Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>30993

well to be honest... what is the price difference where you are in regards to the D50 and D70s?

...actuall it's my personal preference over the D50, so yeah SAVE YO MONEY FOR LENSES !!! WOOT!! :D

Well i think your question has been answered, go for the D50 and get lenses!!!
>> Anonymous
I can get the D50 house + AF 50/1,8D for around 960$ new. Should I buy that or should i buy the D50 kit + AF 50/1,8D?
>> PORTRAITS! Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>30995

D50 + kit as in 18-55mm??? nonono just buy the body + the 1.8D

or go the Body + the 18-70mm and wait for the 1.8D

The 18-70 is a versatile lens and gets almost bang for your buck as the 1.8D does.

If you just get the body and 1.8D it could limit what kinda photos you take, but if you're happy to play with the 50mm (75mm in digital 1.5 crop terms) it's alot of fun. The F/1.8 does allow alot more playing around at low light situations.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
ignore my subject title, it keeps coming back after i delete it... stupid portraits.
>> Anonymous
>>30997
Ok, then I will go for the D50 body and the 1.8D :)
>> Anonymous
Um.. The 50mm is a very restrictive lens as far as focal length goes. Especially since it becomes something like 80mm when you put it on a DSLR. Maybe someone who's been shooting for a while will not find a problem with this, but a new photographer most certainly will.

I think you should start off with a decent zoom lens that covers a lot of focal length. The 18-70 is alright, it came with my D70 when I bought it. I don't use it much anymore, but it served me well. I think I would have stopped taking pictures if I started out with a 50mm prime.

Anyhow, the 50mm 1.8D is a good lens, but it shouldn't be your first.

>>31016

so all 50mm lenses for DLSRs end up more like 80mm? what?

Crop factor. The Nikon D50 has one of 1.5 because the colour sensor is not as large as a full frame camera.

read here.

http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/crop-factor.html

Whilst i agree with the comment about the 50mm (75mm in DSLR terms) it's not actually that restrictive and forces you to frame shots properly. After all you can still zoom in and out, just need to use foot zoom.

But like i mentioned the 18-70mm is a much better starter lens.

     File :-(, x)
the 50mm f/1.8 is a great lense for the price, the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 is brilliant also for the price.

i would go for the 18-70mm if i can, but the 50mm is a good second choice. Dont bother for the f/1.4 its twice the price for only about a 1/4 of a stop faster and only stops down to f/16 as apposed to f/22, better dof control the cheaper 50mm f/1.8 has.

also, try to find a D70(s) as its slightly more comfortable to hold than a D50, might be more suiting for your hand.

You want the K100D. It'll will work with every lens Pentax has ever made (some really old ones might need a $10 adaptor). If you don't mind manually focusing, you can find high-quality used lenses relatively cheap. Nikon lens quality is just as good as Pentax, but their non-pro DSLRs have terrible backwards compatibility. You'll spend a lot more money on lenses as you'll have to buy at new or near-new prices most of the time. If you want quality on a budget, Pentax is your best bet. Also, once you've tried antishake, you'll wonder how you lived without it.

But this is coming from a dedicated Canon fan, so take it with a grain of salt.
>> CUBErt
>>31054
OH SHI~~~ Thats cool.
But how is the image quality? Is it better, och worse than the D50? Or are they equal?
>> bw !ef8V18P/FY
>>31061
Image quality's pretty much identical; both sensors are very high quality. And don't let people scare you off the 18-55mm kit lenses. For the price, they work well, and will let you experiment with different focal lengths without going bankrupt. Save your cash, look at the recorded focal length in the image files after you've used it for awhile, and then you'll know how to wisely spend your money on lenses.

If you really want to get the best quality possible, get big memory cards and shoot in raw. It takes more time to process when you're back at your PC, but you can finetune everything. It's like owning a pro photolab.

Go for 50mm. 1.4D if you can spare it, but 1.8D is fine.

>>30992

what the fuck are you spewing on about? yeah buy a shit body but spend thousands on lenses. your photos must be GREAT. if you want to look at things far away buy some binoculars.

>>30985

get a dslr, get a decent 50mm lense and a tripod. thats all you will need for a long time.Dont go for anything other than canon or nikon. the reason for that is build quality and support.

Dont fall for this trap that many do and think that you need to sink money into lots of lenses.

antishake ...lol. what ever did we do befor anti-shake.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>31096

...good one dipshit. Cause tha't exactly what i advocated. A shit body. Stfu. A D50 is not a shit body.

Anti-shake? what are you going on about? No one is storing a boner for anti-shake, so again STFU.

Spending on lenses is a trap?... yeah thanks Manray, i feel safer with you in charge of /p/

>>31100

if you spend more on your lenses than your body then yes you are an idiot. this guy is asking advice on nikon over pentax. antishake as mentioned by others, not you, is a gimick.

>>do not buy the SLR if you're not prepared to fork out thousands for lenses down the track.

you would have know that if you looked at the post number quotations.

oh and yes the d50 isnt a shit body but it is outdated if you were then going to spend "thousands" on lenses. i dont think this guy is do you? moron.

LOLZ WOOT!! STFU GBT/b/....what great memes. your like a 4chan poster child. well done.

>>31113
Of course you are going to spend more on lenses than on the body, Since lenses last you more than one body...

I have D50, (700$) and approx 2000$ worth of lenses, and the next Nikon DSLR I get I won't need to spend another cent on lenses.

Eventually I will probably spend more on Camera bodies. But when your starting out its almost a fact that if you are serious about what you do (aka want to do it professionally, or as a serious hobbyist) you will spend more on lenses.
>> Anonymous
>>31120

>>its almost a fact

lol yeah it says so on wiki.

sorry kid you are the classic case of spending to much on lenses. dont worry about it, many many ppl do it aswell.

what happens is that you start to think that you need more lenses to take better pictures. If your just starting out you dont need more than one "allrounder" lense.

a good 50mm lense will cope with most things ppl will need it for.
>> Anonymous
>>31122
Good work douche bag you have single handedly proven you have no idea what you're talking about. Show me ONE professional photographer that has a body which costs more than his array of lenses, oh that's right YOU CAN'T.

GTFO

>>31132

we arnt talking about pros here are we. we are in a therd that started with a guy asking if he should go for a d50 or a pentax k100.

you took it apon yourself to tell him that he WILL buy more lenses and that everything you said is FACT. there are lots of photographers that dont buy equiptment, they rent it so yes there are many that dont have vast lense collections. fine art photograpers?. you dont seem to know any.

you have misstaken the fact that you own the lowest end nikon dslr and a bunch of lenses for having any actual knowlege.
>> Anonymous
>>31132

yah dint U kn0w that all professional photographers are paparazzi and sports photographer. ALL pro photographers use DSLRS and have a massive collection of lenses. Like a fookin wine cellar. its TRUE cus i said so.

What the fuck are you talking about? I have a Digital Rebel XTi. Btw get a real fucking argument everything you've said about FACT this and bullshit that is exactly what you're doing, you're telling him he WON'T buy lenses and everyting YOU SAY IS FACT. There are MANY photographers that have lenses which exceed the cost of the camera especially if the camera is not a high end one. Stop acting like douche.
>> thefamilyman
lol, about 80% of any new lense you will buy is worth more than the camera body itself (we'ere not talking about pro bodies here). Buy 2 'cheaper' lenses that thats more than the body, there is nothing wrong with that.
i have a D70, F60 and F5, but my lenses amount to more than twice the value of my bodies (and a F5 is not cheap!) am i a moron for having a lense that fits the situation and can be interchanged onto any of my bodies? i think not, i've just collected them over the years. ^_^

Enjoy your camera and lenses ^_< and dont listen to that idiot, i think most of us dont really understand where he's going with that argument

this guy asked for advice on which camera he should get.you cant go wrong with nikon. just make sure you get the best deal for the camera you want.

>>I think he's saying that you can take awesome photos without spending shitload of money on lenses.

yes, but thats not how it works. Most hobby photographers or those that take it "seriously" without making money from it generally have nowhere to vent their photography. the pictures get taken and stored on their computers or in a album. they have no way of critiquing their own work, apart from the purely technical side.

Its not wrong, its just limited. they may well be good photographers but they dont produce good pictures.
