All depends on what kind of camera your using, but I use bounce flash. If you're using a point and shoot it isn't easy but you can still try a slight downward angle, it'll cut down on shadows. If you're using an SLR buy a flash, don't complain about price; do it. Buy a cable for the flash hot shoe or a wireless transmitter and hold the flash off to the side. It's a lot better than direct flash. Check strobist.com for information on flashes and lighting.
