They do exist... but they aren't exactly the richest people on earth. But I guess that's beyond the point of such people.

You need moneys to travel to the locations you want to take photos of as well, or get subsidized by some crazy philantropist...

And then you need good pics. Plus, I guess you'd make more money selling the pics by yourself.
Publicize yourself -> eliminate the middle men -> profit!

you ought to work for an agency.
I know people that sells pics on the internet but the money they make is far from being enough to eat a whole month.

It's still a real job. You may love it, but you'll need to be going out and taking pictures ALL the time. Probably even when you're sick of it, probably even when you don't want to, probably even when it's nasty and crappy outside. Then you'll have to be paying a lot of attention to all kinds of little details and spend a lot of time with post-processing. Then you'll have to do the marketing and accounting, which is a whole other can of worms. Like I said, it's a real, full time job.

QFT. I know a professional photographer who spends 3/4 of his time photoshopping out little fat folds on people's necks and shaping their eyebrows, because that's what people want these days. Realistic photographs don't sell.

I took a full range of photographs for a book once, and let me tell you it's a real pain in the ass and absolutely exhausting. It was so rough on me that I pretty much ended up stopping my photography for 2 years, with no interest in going on. I applaud those who can stop, do this for a living, under deadlines and then photoshop it to their liking.

the average salary for someone with a degree in photojournalism is $24,090. All the kids with fine art photo degrees that I know work at Starbucks.

photography is either a hobby or art. Hobbies don't earn you money, and all artists die poor.

Oh, and to make it as a stock photographer, you'd have to produce 100-200 sellable photos every day. Considering that maybe one out of every 10 photo you would make is sellable, you'd have to shoot essentially nonstop for ten hours a day.

And that's only if you can find a stock agency willing to buy 200 photos from you every day. The real number is far lower. If you want to make money in photography (you won't, but it's worth a try), go pick up a copy of the Photographer's Market 2007. It's basically a big phone book of all the stock agencies, magazines, big newspapers, etc. plus several very helpful chapters on contracts, copyrights, insurance, basically everything you need.
