Dear /p/,

How do you decide your memory for your SLR?

Do you shoot a lot of RAW, or Just a lot of Fine JPEGs?
2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB?
Ultra II, Extreme III?

feels good man.

Not sure. Pretty new to it. Part of me wants to geek out and shoot everything in RAW+JPEG. The other half is thinking that shooting in just JPEG is fine.

I shoot raw on one 2GB and one 4GB Extreme IV.

RAW, or you're doing it wrong (unless you're a sports guy with thousands of photos per game).

I suppose If I go a 4GB, w/ 14MP camera, I should get about 130ish RAWs, as opposed to 600+ JPEG. Seems small in comparison, but I suppose 130 shots is pretty big.

Does Ultra II and Extreme III have any real noticable difference?
>> Anonymous
>>280138
Yes, especially now that Extreme III's are 30MB/s. Keep in mind that it only matters if you've got a camera that writes fast enough to take advantage of the card's speed.

>if you've got a camera that writes fast enough to take advantage

How do you know?

I've got a Sony A350. The Spec sheet doesnt say how quickly it writes :(

4gb for about 600 raw shots at 6mp

Ultra has two vowels, Extreme has three.
>> Anonymous
you need to use extrem III for extrem fast shutter speed
>> Anonymous
4gb was just closely not enough for me for a day of 40D raw shooting,
so I got a 8GB sandisk extreme III 30mb/s now, should be good now.

Several 2GB cards. I don't trust cards, and when it fails, I want to minimize the amount of photos that the card takes with it.

Raw + Small jpeg

That way I can print from the raw files, and anything that goes on the web is small jpeg straight from the camera.

I hate spending time in post.

Oh and I generally use ext IV because of the write speed

40D RAW shooter. ~14MB on the larger side.

I use mostly 4GB cards, some 8GB and the 2GB cards from my Rebel.
>> 50 øre !!NM5mwCa2Qiu
Had one 2GB extreme III which came with my 400D, went on an assignment at a volleyball game (school project) and it filled up after 30 minutes so I quickly invested in a 8GB extreme III. Very happy so far.

1gb here (I have an EOS D30, lols).

I shoot fine/large JPEG because I'm lazy.

Ken Rockwell says RAW is a waste of time and he's a pro. I am inclined to believe him.

You're such a fag.

Generally speaking - start with what processing speed you want. Usually if you have a decent SLR you'll get atleast 100x. Then it goes to space, 4gb is pretty cheap nowadays and it holds a fair amount of photos. If your going on a long trip go for 8gb or get 2 4gb cards.

I have a pair of 8GB III's I shoot RAW on. I'd get a lot more if I shot compressed JPG but I don't care.
>> sunshine
I shoot only RAW just because I'm too lazy to fix up my white balance everytime the lighting changes.
I just use Ultra II, 2GB.
Shoot with a Nikon D70, eh memory's never really a problem for me, I usually can upload immediately after I shoot whatever I have to.

RAW + JPEG, EOS 450D and 16GB Ultra II
>> Anonymous
RAW + JPEG (medium) 2x 8gb Extreme CF & 1x 16gb (large JPEGs only) For family events, traveling and what not. The two smaller ones i use for experimenting for the time being (HDR, Capturing lightning etc..)

RAW + JPEG small
I use jpegs just to more easily browse through files in windows explorer thumbnail view.
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
RAW + Small basic jpeg. Three 1GB cards.. It's all I have. One came bundled with my camera, the other two, I found somewhere.
>> Anonyfag of Borneo !bHymOqU5YY
2x 2GB cards and one 1GB card. RAW all the way except for snapshot type of photos, for which I will use JPEG. EOS 400D.

i use ultraII too. as far as i experienced, it´s fast enough.
use a fast shutter and no live-view and you´ll easily get the max of 2.5 pics per second. after a couple of shots the frenquence is going to get slower, but i think that is an issue with the camera not with the memory (i.e. the cameras ressource power isnt enough, not the write speed of the card)

the only real advantage of an extremeIII would be the faster read speed but seriously...

I have a 1gig I got 4 years ago, it was $50, lol.

I'm upgrading my camera soon and when I do, I will either purchase two 4 gig cards or one/two 8 gig cards. I never had a problem with card corruption before but I am hearing about it more, so I think shooting multiple smaller cards may be more safe.

I have a D200 and it's buffer will take about 20 RAW + basic JPG as fast as the shutter will go, then it takes about 10 or 20 second sto write to the 4GB Ultra 2 I have.
So I suppose it depends on how many pictures you need to take fast and how big your cameras buffer is.

What systems Are there for offloading data off cards ont portable HDD's?

You could get a 4GB Extreme 4 and just keep offloading data when you get a chance.

A 2GB Sandisk Extreme Ultra II and a Lexar 4GB cos i couldn't find the Sandisk one :<
