I know I'm opening a can of worms by posting a thread that has most likely been made 20,000,000,00 times before, but so be it.

I am going on a extended trip soon, and have no camera to document my travels. That coupled with my very, very limited photography skills leads me to getting a point and shoot.

I need recommendations for a good P&S under $300. What should I be looking for feature wise?

built-in HDR is the hot new feature.

Side thought: is there a way to replace the AA with a Li-Ion battery, or a suitably priced equivalent?

On second thought, I'll just grab some high-powered rechargeables.

Also, not OP.

Yep. Rechargable NiMH AAs are the way to go. They can be picked up with a 110-230V charger quite cheaply now, negating the need for more than a plugin adapter if there's a voltage difference wherever you're going.

[Plugs will be different frequently, but if you have a multivoltage charger, you won't need to use a converter.]

Also, I have a preference for 15-minute chargers. Sure, you don't get quite the charge out of each battery compared to 8-hour chargers, but damn, it's nice to have 4 80-90% charged batteries in 15 minutes. Again, retail prices are brutally overpriced and sales are plentiful.

Thanks a bunch, I'll keep this in mind!

For now, I bid thee good morrow.

Whoa, hold up a sec. I've got one more question to add to the discussion. See, my friend just went back to the States, and he's about to deploy to Iraq. What kind of camera should he buy and take along?

Goddammit, the cycle never ends, does it?

No offense to you or your friend personally. What's the budget? How serious is he about photography? What conditions (environmental and things like storage space, power, etc) will he be in during his deployment?

You suck at detecting trolls.
