OP here: uploading it seemed to have washed the colours out a bit :[

Suspiciously good, especially for someone who's only been shooting for a couple of weeks.

The washed out colors probably come from saving it with an sRGB color space after editing it in Adobe RGB. Here's a web page with some more info.

wow, that sky is pretty epic.

Agreed. The sky is a much better subject than the tree's shadow.

Not really. If you'd only photograph the sky, it'd be shit. It's the combination that makes this win. Learn composition.

OP here, I did take a couple of shots of just the sky but they were really boring, I thought the shadow in this added to it somewhat.

Take up another hobby, this isn't for you.

this is a nice photo. the sky really adds a lot to it, but in my opinion it would look better with a little more negative space on the right side to the center and the shadow of the tree coming in from the left of the frame and stretching to the center of the frame. it would draw your eye in from the side of the frame to the awesome clouds and mountains in the center, and distract you from the shadow on the mountain. the dof is good. maybe try re shooting at a different time of day that casts the shadow of the tree in a more interesting direction
