Sup guys. I hate to start another "buying an SLR" thread, but I'm still a photography noob and need some halp. I've already decided on a Canon Rebel XTI, but since I've heard the bundled lens is shit, I'm gonna buy the body by itself and get a better lens. Two questions follow.

Question 1: I trust newegg a whole lot more than any other online store, but their price for the camera body is pretty high:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830120072

So I go looking for a better deal, and find this shit:

http://www.fotoconnection.com/viewitem.php?IndexID=52982

It's the same camera, except it comes with the stock lens and it costs about 100bux less. If I buy the cheaper model am I gonna get scammed?

Question 2: Lenses. Regardless of the site I buy the camera from, I'm gonna need a lens that's better than the bundled one. Can you guys recommend something with a decent zoom and AF that doesn't go higher than about 250-300 bucks? I see quite a few reasonable lenses here:

yes.

what kind of photography do you want to do? landscapes? portraits? macro? street? gotta give us an idea of what you want before we can help you decide what you need.

Mostly landscape stuff, I do the "urban exploration" bit so I'll probably be taking pictures of abandoned buildings and infrastructure, both inside and out. I'm not really focusing on portraits but I might have to take some of my family or something. Macro is pretty unimportant to me for the time being.

Look man just get the infamous 50mm equiv 1.8 lens. Its cheap, fast (good for urbex) and will good for a "photography noob" (your words not mine) to learn with. Like they always say, the best zoom lens you can buy is a 50mm and a fast pair of legs. Cheers

Get the body with either the 18-135mm IS USM or the 28-200mm. You'll end up with an average lens either with these or the kit lenses, but I'd rather have one lens than have to switch back and forth out on the street.

Also, STAY AWAY from BestPriceCameras.

50mm as your only lens is annoying as shit on a 1.6x FOV crop sensor, especially for landscapes and architecture.

Not even 74370 and I'm pissed at you. I even agree with you (with one caveat I'll mention in a minute) and I'm pissed at you.

>Look man just get the infamous 50mm equiv 1.8 lens.
>the infamous 50mm equiv 1.8 lens.
>the infamous 50mm equiv
>50mm equiv

And personally, I like the telephoto effect on landscapes.

Go find a fucking forum that is dedicated to people who don't know shit about fuck. Go do your own goddamn research instead of making people who already own good shit read through another goddamn fucking stupid post.

Also, go here http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html#canon and do about 5 hours of reading before coming to us with your stupid fucking questions.

Such anger. There is no 50mm equivalent that is cheap and fast for the Canon system - "The infamous" lens is the Canon 50mm f1.8, recommended blindly by many Anon in most DSLR threads.

So I skimmed and missed the word 'equivalent' but with so many tards spooging over the nifty fifty every time someone needs a beginner lens it's to be forgiven ok

Also, internally identical to a Panasonic camera that sells for hundreds less. The only differences are JPEG processing (and it shoots RAW) and external styling. The Leica looks better, but the Panasonic looks like it'd be a dozen times more comfortable to shoot with.

Protip to Leica: Just because a design looks a bit like the M doesn't mean it'll handle like one. At all.

>>74861
Actually, hold on. Not thinking.

The "also" is wrong. The two cameras in question actually do have a 16x9 sensor, with crop modes for 3:2 and 4:3.
>> Anonymous
the Leica is superior.

OP, go check www.slickdeals.net (it's a site that posts deals on everything) There's a deal on the XTI body only. I'd link you, but i can't cause I'm on my wii

How so? They're the same camera, with two exceptions:

1. JPEG processing is better on the Leica, but one shouldn't be shooting JPEG. Their raw output is exactly the same.

2. The Leica looks better, with its all-black-except-the-red-dot-and-some-chrome-details styling. But it doesn't have any sort of a grip; the Panasonic at least has a little nub.

>>74869
i had no trouble gripping it.
i was thinking of buying it but..
which panasonic are you speaking of?
i'll have to do my own comparing.

Panasonic DMC-LX2. Adorama shows $599 for the Leica and $369.95 for the Panasonic.

Leica and Panasonic have an agreement with regard to their point-and-shoot cameras and a model of DSLR where Leica designs the lenses, Panasonic designs the camera and sensor and then builds it all. The only difference there is is that with the Leicas, someone in Solms decides on a few cosmetic changes and a different way of processing the JPEGs, and bumps up the price.

The D-Lux 3 shouldn't handle poorly, but it's just silly to be making a camera without any grip just so it'll look a bit more like the M.

The kit lens really isn't that bad, especially for a beginner, especially especially for the price it goes for. If you're stopped down to around f/8, it's nice and sharp, and even wide open it's sharp enough for 90% of the uses to which I put my camera. And it's by far the cheapest way to get a 28mm-equiv focal length on the XTi's 1.6x crop.

Basically, if you spend your time taking photographs rather than masturbating to resolution charts, there's nothing wrong with the kit lens.
>> Blew Macks
I ended up getting the kit from newegg. It ships monday.

Thanks to everyone who helped.
