ND filters

So i was lookin at some shit about ND filters in my photog class today and i think i want one. Anything i should know about them before i spend any money on one?
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
you dont need one.
>> M/A !n21TE7QU8U
>>149009
Seconded.
If you don't know what to use it for, don't spend money on it. Unless you're a ferrari collector.

but you need nd filters to do shit like sato tokihiro, sooooooo... there are practical uses.
>> Anonymous
you only need to use nd grad filters if you shoot landscape
>> Anonymous
If you know why you need one in technical reasons, get one. If not, leave it.

>>149009
For example, does not know anything about ND filters, thus, does not need one or want one.

>>149024
I need a set of graduated ND filters so nokthnxbai.

>>149028
Who said anything about gradual?
Also, learn how to take pictures first.
>> hal9000
I'm not Opie, but in cases like Tokihiro, with hour+ daytime exposures, that'd mean a good deal of extra glass in front of the lens, right? So in stacking a bunch of ND filters, do you have to worry about distortion? As in, do you have to invest in some primo glass to avoid crazy distortion?
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>149029
You should have said 2x 4x etc etc if you were trying to imply specific types of filters. Had I had a new grad NDs and a polorizor to play with i might have had more "interesting" photos, with better exposed ground and deeper sky.
>> hal9000
>>149038
Why are you bringing up graduated filters outta nowhere?

"A graduated ND filter is similar except the intensity varies across the surface of the filter. This is useful when one region of the image is bright and the rest is not, as in a picture of a sunset." -Love, Wikipedia

THIS MAN KNOWS HIS GOOGLE, now if only the rest of you would use it.

Hey, you're the one bringing up specific ND filters. OP is talking about getting just one ND filter, and has a picture of a standard ND filter.
Also, it's not your image quality or colors that is the problem, it's the composition that is just boring. Stop telling yourself you'd be better if you had more gear, and start learning. You can do it, but this is seriously not the right attitude.

OP, I utilize ND filters both for achieving a desired light attenuation in high precision laser experiments, and also for making more "interesting" photos, with better exposed ground and deeper sky.

I agree with the poster who said to get one if you know why you need it; otherwise, it's not one of those things that necessarily belongs in every kit bag (like a cheap UV filter for simple lens protection, for example).

spoiler: buy 2 CPL filters instead.

insta grad ND if you're not a retard

i know what i want to use it for. longer exposures during day, i was just wondering if there was any reason to just plain ignore them or something

>>149055

I have this feeling in my gut that that is not entirely true.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>149041
Cause someone said i didnt need them, i need a specific type so i mentioned it, reading comprehension much?

I took some landscapes of a boring area, wasnt expecting amazing shots. The number 1 crit was the under exposure, which was due to having to exposure for the sky and not doing TRU HDR leaving the ground underexposed. That is pretty much exactly what grad NDs were made for.

if you can make an argument for why you need it, you probably need it.

oh and namefag+love shit = no respect

There are extremely dense ND filters availible, ND400 from hoya and ND1000 from B+W, iirc

More ND filter porn.

Also i have a tripcode, namefag.

The problems with your photos were compositional and artistic, not technical. A picture of nothing with absolutely perfect exposure in sky and land is still a picture of nothing.

>spoiler: buy 2 CPL filters instead.

So yeah, you just flat out don't know what a graduated ND filter is.

GTFO you goddamn troll. I am seriously so fucking sick of you that I want to stab you in your ambiguously-gendered goddamn face. I don't think that person missed the point. I think you just lack the ability to understand a logical argument or even keep a coherent thought running for more than one post.

tl;dr: Hush. Grownups are talking.

Right someone who cant even string together a sentence is an adult, high standards ac. Im not even trolling, im just defending myself from some pointless bashing.

>>149084
yeah pretty much, there wasnt any need to bring up the content because if you read the thread i was well aware they were boring photos, only so much you can do with nothing. I want some filters to help perfect the technical side of it and I know why i need them, unlike our dear op.
>> hal9000 !a4fa8BKGtQ
>>149086
You must not have been reading the headers on these posts, as I've not commented on your images, nor have I visited this thread of which you speak. Easy mistake to make, I don't blame you.
>> hal9000 !a4fa8BKGtQ
>>149086
Additionally, I see nothing in this thread that would indicate that OP doesn't know what he wants to use the filters for. In fact:

>>i know what i want to use it for. longer exposures during day, i was just wondering if there was any reason to just plain ignore them or something

Sounds about right to me, but then again, I don't have your fantastically above average cognitive abilities.

Sometimes small portions of your posts lead me to believe that you understand about the internet, and that this is 4chan, not someplace where folks think about what they type beforehand... but then I push myself away from my monitor and see it in context within the rest of your post. And I realize the truth.

i know what i want to do with one. they allow for longer exposures thats what i want one for ive already said that if you cant fucking read
>> Anonymous
>>149060
I think you've misread your own thread.. Exposure was definiatly not the number one critic. Even boring landscapes can be captured in amazingly beautiful pictures. It's not the lack of things to photograph, it's your lack of imagination, creativity, and skill. I really hope you can understand that.

im glad my thread could serve as a place to make fun of someone...
