-Sony Alpha A700 (my choice; Y/N?) -Canon EOS 40D -Nikon D200 These are very close in terms of both functions and image quality. Sony has a better screen and in-body image stabilization, Canon has live view, D200 is weatherproof. I'd probably recommend Canon, as A700 annoys me with noise reduction that you can't turn off, and D200 is a bit noisier than others.
-Olympus something E-3? Not sure E-3 is a pro camera intended for shooting in harsh environments. It's more functional and more rugged, but also more expensive than all of the above. I'm not sure if he needs that.
