In colour, just expose for shadows. Don't be afraid to overexpose by even 1.5EV, especially on consumer grade negatives (they have enough latitude for this). Maybe even set it on your camera, to not bother with remembering (if your camera does not allow manually setting film ISO, change your camera, and learn to hack DX codes until you do so). Sometimes it's actually the only way to get vibrant colours from them, esp if they were stored in crappy conditions (that is, not in a fridge).
This goes for negatives, for slides it's exactly the opposite.
