Hey /p/, I got a couple of b/w shots I took for a college course. Some of them might have some spots because I was still new at developing and messed up while I was treating the film. Anyway, lemme know what you think.

PS: They're black&white because it was a requirement of the course, not because of 'instant art' bullshit

Compositions pretty solid on all of them, subject however is very boring and screams photography student.

well I am a photography student

I guess im trying to say don't fall into the trap of taking photos of cliche things. Put just as much effort into thinking about and developing the idea for the photo as you do taking it and processing it.

thanks, will definitely keep that in mind for next time

This one is pretty cool as is certainly the most interesting photo here. People always seem to make photos more interesting for me at least.

This one is twigs.

Needs more contrast...blacks would make the images pop more. This was the toughest thing for me to understand just starting out. Overall, composition seems decent, but who am I to comment on composition?

Are these scans from your prints, or the negs? If the darkroom you're using (I'm assuming your school's) has enlargers that can be used for color printing (ones that can adjust CMY levels, you can also use filters), try messing around with the Magenta and Yellow levels. It sounds weird, but give it a try. More magenta will burn in shadows while leaving highlights pretty much alone, thus producing more contrast. Yellow will do the opposite, making the image flatter; it's a nice way to recover a lot of highlight detail for tough burns. Keep in mind that the filters will block some light, and you'll have to adjust your exposure accordingly.

You know, or not.
Despite all the bitching I see on here about OMG BAWRING SUBJEXT probably 50% of what any of you faggots would see in a museum with a Photography wing would be what you would consider "snapshots" or "boring subject."

That said, some of these good, and some of these are spectacularly awful.

Horrible composition, messy looking photo, just not very interesting at all.

But is that because he didn't spend a long time composing it? No. It's just because it didn't turn out interesting. $20 says if he had just shot a ton of random snapshots of the forest swinging his camera around wildly like some sort of chimpanzee hopped up on goofballs he would have come up with at least one stunningly awesome photograph.

The more pictures you take = the more likely you are to come out with one or two truly awesome ones.

Also, people and urban settings. If you have people in your photographs there's a 90% chance that they're going to be more interesting than photos without people.

I gotta edit to add that if he HAD spent a long time composing it, then the photo might have come out ok. But honestly it's just an extremely boring subject and it isn't very interesting to look at. What I was trying to say is that taking random snapshots would have been better than spending a long time trying to properly compose a photograph of a boring subject

I like the photos, but the subjects themselves aren't very interesting. I've probably came across about 628128349198 twigs when I was out shooting today.
