Flash question regarding the 400D Anonymous
"So I've been looking at DSLRs and it came down to the Nikon D80 and the Rebel XTi. I think I've decided to go with Canon mainly because of lens choices.

Here's the thing....I plan to do a lot of shooting indoors so I'm going to get the 50mm 1.4, etc. Is there a way to prevent the flash from constantly popping up? I played with this camera in the store and it was pretty poorly lit and it kept wanting to use the flash.

I know it was because the kit lens was on board and it needed a lot more light but is there a way to tell the camera "never use the flash" besides putting it in "no flash" mode? Can I still control aperture and shutter speed in that mode?

If there's a workaround for this, I think I'll pull the trigger on this purchase.

Thanks in advance,

Matt"

That double-quote at the start and near the end of that post wasn't a typo. He was quoting some moron in the dpreview forums.

OP here. DPR forums are awesome.

Some guy wants Canon to make a 17-85 1.8 IS lens for 1500$.

"Today, I encountered an opposite problem taking scenic shots: in auto mode, in bright daylight, the flash popped up (almost knocked my hat off) and fired away. Each time I had the camera in auto mode, this was repeated.

With a reading of about 1/250 @ f13, that flash shouldn't be coming up and firing unless I want it to.

What am I missing here, folks. The manual isn't offering any clues. It must be something so simple I am overlooking it..or a flaw in the camera. Perhaps, related to the no-fire situation in dark conditions.

I ain't exactly a newbie. I've been shooting since ... well, a very long time. I regularly win at our camera club competition and have sold some pix. I understand the various relationships among aperture, shutter et al. I can drive Photoshop.

Well you could always just use the P mode, and set the camera to take jpegs if you really don't like RAW.

Use manual mode, auto mode is for faggots.
