Mamiya 645, Pentax 645, Pentax 6x7, Bronica SQ, Bronica ETR. All quality, relatively modern cameras available as a kit with a normal lens for around $300.

If you're looking at Yashica TLRs, look at any model OTHER than the 124G. It's a decent camera (for a cheap Japanese TLR) but internet reviewer assholes have driven the prices up way higher than is reasonable.

I found the TLRs to be fragile (READ: I fucking broke my first one), I'm too used to knocking around SLRs and the older yashicas just arent up to it. I've seen Mamiyas that looks like they've been thru hell and back and still take great pics. RB67 kits go on ebay for extremely reasonable prices, film is also kinda cheap all things considered. I had atleast half a dozen RB sets get away from me on e-bay frmo snipers in the last 3-5 seconds :( I finally gave up, but there are some good deals to be had for ~300, also, Bronica.

I just borrowed my grandfather's Seagull (he got it for old time's sake after selling his mostly-unused Rolleiflex aaag why didn't he keep it). Thought it would suck but the build quality is great, and I'm waiting on my first couple rolls now.

Logically a system SLR like those mentioned would be far superior in the long run, though.

What's the cheapest digital back? I'm thinking about getting a Mamiya 645 and get a digital back when I can afford it. Would it be stupid not to just use an ordinary dslr?
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.

Probably a bad idea. The only advantage of a digital back is the extra billion megapixels, which only comes in handy if you print really big on a regular basis. Apart from cost, you end up suffering from slow speed (both shooting and sensitivity) and massive files clogging up your workflow.

None of them are actually cheap, but the least expensive ones are very old and probably would not even fare comparably to a cheap DSLR on the current market. If you want to shoot digital for under $20,000, just get a 35mm-format DSLR.

Go Holga/Diana!

Medium format on the truely hipster/student budget!

For reals.. Its a great way to experiment and do crazy dreamy looking stuff in medium format super cheap.

word of advice
DO NOT BUY KIEV MF CAMERAS. they are crap and there's only one guy in georgia that still services them. for what you pay,you can get a reliable camera listed above.

I don't think that after the Russian invasion he will be servicing them anymore.

my bad, i meant american georgia.

here's the guy
http://www.kievusa.com/

he was/is the 'authorized' seller of kiev cameras on ebay. and my mistake, got the state completely wrong too haha.

The guy in Georgia is Mike Fourman and he was one of two authorized Kiev dealers in the US for a long time (the other being Kiev USA). I don't know if he's still an authorized dealer, but he's still around. He was and probably still is also the USA contact for Hartblei, a company that refits Kiev cameras and makes a bunch of tilt-shift and specialty lenses starting with Kiev parts.

He does most of his business on ebay and has a website at www.kievcamera.net. I bought two cameras and several lenses from him about ten years ago and was pleased with the product and service. I had one camera body go back on warranty and everything was handled well.

That said, I don't think Kiev cameras are such a great deal anymore. Before the used values on MF cameras tanked, they were great. Now you can get a good used Mamiya, Bronica, or even older Hasselblad system for what new Kievs are selling for. And never buy a used Kiev.

Learn to snipe yourself? It's not hard, and it's the only way to get things cheaper. Never ever bid before the last minute on eBay, it's pretty much useless. And just because you broke your Yashica, doesn't mean other TLRs are as breakable.

RB67 cameras are nearly indestructible, but pretty hard when it comes to handheld shots.

I'd say go for a Mamiya m645, or Bronica ETR.

having seen the innards of the old yashica tlrs, I can say with confidence they they're comparably fragile. I had a cable release nipple on my yashica 44 and I set it down on the road next to me to meter with my nikon, it rolled over onto the front and the nipple ripped out the shutter release. The front and sides are VERY thin metal on the old ones. Prices being what they are, if I wanted something cheap, I'd buy a new seagull 107 off b&h. Otherwise I'd be inclined to get an RB67 or a C330.
The problem with the e-bay snipers is they put rediculous max bids on their snipes, so even if my bid goes in last, I still couldn't make a 500$ bid on a 300$ camera, which is what it appears to take on some of these auctions.

I still do not understand how you seeing how fragile a Yashica TLR is, means all TLRs are fragile. A C330 is nowhere as fragile, for example.

True that.

aaah thank you! i knew there was a guy in georgia that sold these!

i got to use a kiev 88 a while back and it was awful. it was way too temperamental for my tastes. i got rid of it and got a bronica s2a and fell in love.

most russian cameras kinda are (i'm including lomos and the like in here too)
>> Lynx !!KY+lVSl0s2m
>>234850
I mean OLD. I said yashic a44, but I mean yashica a. Made is 1959. C330 is a pro camera and its very solid. But you can get like 5 or 6 yashica a's for the price of a C330 setup.

I understand that point, I was referring to the point where you said TLRs in general were very fragile, which is nonsense.
