i'm fucking woefully behind the times on software these days, /p/. i have some 7000 photos sitting on my computer, and i don't want to use explorer or irfanview to wade through all of them. what's the best way to browse through a shit ton of photos wicked fast? no picasa, plz.

second, what do you guys use for raw? just adobe camera raw?

in return for answering my questions, anybody can post any inane question they want to know but have been too afraid to ask, and i'll answer it without mocking or scorning you. i promise.

what is lightroom for, anyway? light editing and browsing?

An image management application database which helps in viewing, editing, and managing digital photos. It organizes your workflow.

It is a lot faster to use than photoshop cs3 (assuming you use it) and it only uses scripts when you edit your photos so it uses little space and you wont destroy the image unlike PS. Basically it's the photoshop RAW editor in a seperate faster, more convenient and less space taking program with extra features.
If you need to edit the image in a way only PS can do you can transfer it over (ctrl + e) and work.

Lightroom 2 and Photoshop Elements 7 is what I use for sorting and quick edits.

Lightroom is pretty much a simulated lightroom. with good sortingoptions and quick sliders for overall edits like contrast, saturation, exposure and so on. If you are new to editing it's a good choise.

I find it easier to make batch camera raw adjustments in bridge, but lightroom does it fine also. But if I shot a shitton of studio shots that only needed a WB change, I'd just use bridge probably.
