Although I hate to say it because of the desire for most to make their photographs far TOO contrasty, I think this photo definitely could use some extra contrast. There's really no white here, and very little dark black.
I noticed from the EXIF data that you shot f8 @ 250. That looks like a very bright, mostly cloud free day out, so I'm pretty sure you would have had the light to at least have your f-stop closed down to f16 at the very least.
Remember: on perfectly sunny days, f16 @ 500/th of a second will almost always fit the bill.

Not if you're shooting at ISO 50, 100, 3200, etc.

A) Lol diffraction!
B) f/8 is probably the sharpest aperture on the kit Nikkor.
C) What would the OP gain by stopping down? He's got enough DoF.

OP here.
I am used to people on /p/ making pointless statements, but thanks for pointing out how stupid it would have been to stop down with the kit Nikkor. Just got that D40 for my wife for Christmas. I was pretty impressed that such a low-end lens could pick up that much detail. It even picked up some light coming through the individual boards at then end of the dune fence. Pretty sick little camera for the price IMHO.
