I'm at a loss. sv !!vC9KZM3Ch/H
Can anyone tell me why this picture has 987 comments on Flickr? With nearly 4,000 favs and 250k+ views?

I don't even find the subject that interesting.

Of course, I wonder what I'd be thinking if I took the photo? Hopefully the same thing.

This is a picture of something happening. The composition of the photograph isn't important, the wave is. This is getting high ratings because it documents something that most people never see. It's not highly rated because it's a well thought out and executed exposure, it's highly rated because it's fucking cool to look at.

It's just a photograph that tells a dramatic story
that is ephemeral at best. This is the type of photo that appeals to Alien Vs. Predator Fans, not
The Secret Garden fans.

Uh, yeah. I know. That's why I mentioned that quote.

maybe every person who has commented this picture found it because of people who posted it on websites saying the same thing that OP did.

Get a pro account and turn on stats. Then you can see where everyone's coming from.

I was confused as to why one of the shots in my flickr stream suddenly ballooned up to over 500 views in a day. After I learned about stats, it turned out that a link to it had been posted in some moderately creepy eyeglasses fetish board.

That's not my Flickr.

But, I love that there is a moderately creepy eyeglasses fetish board.

nice wave.

Timing makes the picture win. It was probably just point and shoot accidental what did i take a picture of.

But the wave looks cool.

That quote implies that when the subject is more important then the photograph (as is the case with this shot), that's a bad thing. "Don't do that", it says.

I'm saying that it's not a bad thing. Every photograph doesn't have to be a planned exposure. If you're merely trying to capture an event occuring (an assassination comes to mind), the shot doesn't have to be GOOD for it to be compelling.

You think that's bad?

Try visiting Deviant Art, there's so much shit that's praised there it's sickening.

Exactly, remember the whole point is to capture something interesting, interesting > composition.

Hehe, I was actualy in one of those waves,on Cocoa beach when a hurrincane was passing to the east, headed for the carolina's. THose waves were just fun cuz they beat you to death.

I was like 12, and my family is a few breakers down and pointing to me and yelling, and i'm like "what?" and turn around.

Wham!

The quote isn't talking about composition. It's talking about the meaning of the photograph. There's no story to this photo other than it's a crazy looking wave. There's no real meaning other than to document an interesting wave. It's totally fine in the case of this image because that's the purpose of it. The quote I mentioned is more specific to fine art photography, I simply brought it up to add to the discussion.
