yet another gear thread... iAMpedobear !ZgMz0bfHrg
hey /p/

been lurking for a while now and seeing some really good shots being posted here and everywhere else, i feel inspired to build up my gear...

so right now i have:

1. the kit lens that comes with the 350D, a canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
2. a sigma 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 Macro
and 3. a Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM

so next thing im planning to add is the 85mm f/1.8, i've read good things about it and it's relatively cheap, basically the best bang-for-my-buck...

what other lenses should i look into buying in the near future?

I notive a disturbing lack of 50 1.8
>> iAMpedobear !ZgMz0bfHrg
>>124923
you mean the 55/1.8 right? or is there a 50 lens i am unaware of?
>> Anonymous
>>124936

He means the incredibly prolific 50mm f/1.8.
>> Anonymous
>>124945

It's a cheap lens and gives pretty good low-light performance. It's $80 while the 85mm f/1.8 is over $300.
>> Anonymous
>>124945
Doesn't matter, it's $80.

The 85/1.8 is pretty long, but you see to like long. If you want something faster, I'd skip both of them and go for the 50/1.4, which is just an amazing lens.

thanks for the quick responses guys! read abit later about the poor materials that compose the 50/1.8

and a question i've been asking around lower f/number = faster lens? and what does faster mean?
>> Anonymous
it means go to school, and dont buy anything until you at least know what all the "numbers" mean

Yes. Learn to use your camera first. Learn to make the most out of it, push it to its limit. Get to the point where the *only* way to make better pictures is to get new gear (that'll take you a few years, if you're very good).

Otherwise you're just wasting money. I wish I knew what I'm telling you now when I started out, it would have saved me thousands in gear I didn't need and a lot of time I spent trying to improve my pics through better gear when I should've been improving my skills.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>124968
Agreed. If you don't understand aperture at even a basic level, you should definitely not be spending over $300 on a new lens. You've already got three lenses you don't know anything about. You don't need more.
>> Anonymous
get the 50mm 1.8 and only use that lens, you'll learn the most using a prime.
>> Anonymous
>>125079
50mm is too long, although getting it is pretty much de rigeur because of how cheap it is.

OP should sell all his zooms, buy a 28/1.8, a 50mm (1.4 is better, but 1.8 will let him pocket some cash) for a portrait/reach lens, and maybe a wide-angle or telephoto prime, depending on taste.

no such thing as a 55mm 1.8
>> iAMpedobear !ZgMz0bfHrg
hey guise thanks for all the replies, but now i've a separate question:

i'm shooting a dance event this weekend and i don't know which lens to use, should i:

a. bring the kit lens for wider view? (17-55mm)
b. the sigma 28-200 (i might need the zoom)
c. bring both (kinda don't wanna do this, but i will if it's the best way to go about it)

also it's going to be held at a gymnasium, so probably low/diffused lighting. thanks for all the input

They'll all be too slow unless you're using a flash.

Go to a camera store with $80 plus tax in your hand and buy a 50/1.8. Then they'll be some hope for you.

>>125387

If it is indoors, use whatever has the widest aperture you can get.
>> iAMpedobear !ZgMz0bfHrg
>>125395

well damn, problem is i'm not in the US...lol

>>125396

widest i've got is f/3.5... ):

too slow, get 50mm or 85mm 1.8

Every thread you've made so far are failures.

I suggest you sell all your photo shit and invest in drugs and hookers.

stop bumping your own thread, you goddamn newfag.

i dont care that the rest of your threads suck.. everyone makes some shitty ones. but it's totally different to keep bumping that shitty thread to the front page when no kind of discussion is going on.

tl;dr: lurk more, lose the trip, then lurk some more
>> Anonymous
>>126397
Lurk more. Telling people who ask for advice on gear they clearly aren't knowledgeable enough to use yet to use the money to buy drugs and hookers to photograph is a /p/ meme. The idea is go do something interesting and photograph that instead of wanking over new lenses.

Your lenses are fail, but it's your lack of artistic impulse that's holding you back, not them.

You want lens advice? I've given it to you several times in this thread:

>>124952
>>125082
>>125395

That's my advice. Other people have given you theirs.
>> Anonymous
>>126399
All three of your lenses are zooms. You use zooms. Your father doesn't need them either.

Yes, this is the 2000s. And you know what that means? All lenses have gotten better, including primes.

But do you know what hasn't changed? What it takes to make a photograph and the way primes have of forcing photographers to beat the mediocrity out of themself.

ok, sorry for the reaction, as has been stated i am a newfag. Your suggestions did not fall on deaf ears, right now im contacting someone about his 50mm/1.8...hopefully i'll be able to try it out and if all goes well buy it...

also, after reading through this board and other forums, i realize that i "wank over new lenses" so the 50mm will be probably the last lens i'll buy in a while...thank you for all your advice, this thread can now die...

also this is the last post of this trip...i will lurk moar...thanks for putting up with my shit...
>> LOL I LIKE /b/ SO MUCH U GUISE !!dsQWJ1ZSkZ6

yeah, buying a used 50 1.8 is a great idea...

they're like $70 new you dumb, poor faggot.
