Adobe Photoshop CS4

do you use it already? or are you still sticking to CS3 / 7?

are there any useful additions or enhancements beside some 3d effects?

5.5 was the last great photoshop

these days, purpose built software like maya, aperture, express digital darkroom, etc do a much better job than the jack of all trades, master of none
>> Anonymous
>>296209maya, aperture, express digital darkroom

except Photoshop will still remain the one true image editing program even with all the fluff added...

What the fuck does photoshop do thats like maya?

CS4 adds in GPU-acceleration. Non-destructive image resizing (looks cool, may just be a novelty). couple other small things. Some nice effects, but not sure its worth the upgrade cost.

>GPU-acceleration

For everything you do in PS or only for some specific effects? Also, does one have all the possibilities if there is a strong cpu but a bad gpu?
>> Anonymous
just fuckin pirate like everyone did with CS3 and the ones before it and then you'll know what it is like
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
Hey, I could use this. Throwing around 78MP files is sorta brutal, as is. Let alone actual panoramas....

i got the master collection
i like the gpu acceleration, but i only do light editing in photoshop. nothing radically different, but i like upgrading.

i still dont know what half these programs do though.

PS is destructive in general, I use Lightroom 2 unless I really have to use PS, then I export it from Lightroom.

maybe you shouldn't make a 78 MP image to print a fucking 24"x36"

holy shite, a stalker on my /p/

I also plopped down the $2500 for cs4, just cause I like the newest of everything.

I'm starting to like the interface in PS4, it seems kinda bland at first, but it does seem to give you a bigger working area and less distractions.

I just installed it yesterday so really havent had allot of use on it yet, I also kept CS3 installed just incase. I will be uninstalling cs3 this weekend as long as cs4 gives me no problems.

one other thing I downloaded a few videos for cs4. ----Lynda.com - Photoshop CS4 for Photographers--- just to name one..

You guys who compare CS4 to maya are fucking stupid, and Photoshop isn't a "jack of all trades master of none" "unlike previous versions". It's as good as it's always been for its main purpose, it just has increased flexibility. If you can't accept that, then you're backwards, just like the guys that criticize SLR's having video capabilities. It's a new tool/feature on a device older than your mother, cherish it or ignore it, other people will find a use for it.

TLDR: If it's not for photographers, it's probably useful for someone else. Features are features, and I for one find -all- of the new features godly, and the CS3 upgrade simply pales in comparison to CS4. These are real features.

I tried CS4, but didn't see the point of upgrading from CS3.
Cost outweighs the benefits, basically.

I usually use Lightroom anyway, PS is fucking lag shit.
>> Anonymous
anyone complaining about software being "laggy" in this day and age either need to upgrade their computer or are doing it wrong
>> Anonymous
since the question was are you sticking with cs3 or upgrading, not bickering over what it could do. I'll answer that question.

Yeah I still use cs3, wouldn't mind giving cs4 a try, just haven't gotten around to downloading it from mini nova.

Have a feeling it will be a bit too much for my older computer to handle though.

Whoa...I'm not sure about stalker, but somebody actually saved something under my name?

What, do you archive all the trippers?

Oh, and I did the comparison: The 78MP interpolation described is noticeably better than lower interpolations. It's worth the relatively minor additional effort to run the interpolation.

Shit don't bring that back up, Any lab worth printing at will do any quality adjustments in the hardware.
>> Anonymous
at what..? 100% viewed on your monitor?

you don't need 78 MP to print a 24"x36" christ.. there will be no discernable difference from 150 DPI to 300 DPI on print, and no one fucking prints at 300 DPI unless they've got money to throw away
>> Einta !!MWv3ICYobCM
>>296500
Hm...curious. How exactly does the cost change?
>> Anonymous
when they start charging you per sq ft

I'll get CS4 pretty soon, haven't bothered yet. I have PC licenses for CS3, but I switched to Mac, and used a pirated Photoshop because I knew CS4 would be out and I didn't want to buy CS3 twice. Gotta see if I can bullshit an edu discount or something, just in case I can avoid spending 600 bucks on it. I've also been using LR2 heavily, and it's decreased my use of photoshop by a huge amount.

I installed CS4 yesterday. My video card is not supported for 3D stuff, so I can't comment on that, but otherwise, the improvements are very, very minor: some new buttons, some old buttons are improved (no 4px icons anymore!), it doesn't look like I'm using a 1993 Mac anymore, and the installer allows you to disable some additional junk, unlike CS3 that just installed everything. (Though fucking Bridge is still non-removable)
>> suuuuuhffad
CS4 is a waste of time, just stick with cs3, if anything I found cs4 harder to navigate around and more fiddly and I haven't actually found myself using the new features
>> Anonymous
op here

thanks for the replies anons and tripfags.
guess i will use cs3 to get used to PS (yeah, i didnt use PS until now, didnt have the chance, long story) and i guess i'll get cs5 when it comes out. (and if its worth the upgrade)

If you had CS3, stay with it.
If you had neither, it would probably make sense to start with CS4, unless CS3 was already bought, or cheaper, or in some way more desirable.
CS4 rearranges the GUI some, some supposed new speed tweaks (though I have haerd mixed reports on the GPU Acceleration), not sure if any new filters were added.
I remember using 7, then using CS2 on someone else's PC, and being totally lost. I don;t think CS4 is such a change from CS3 (as from 7 to CS2), but I still think if you had the opportunity to learn, laern on the newest. I know one thing I tried with CS2, one of the transform filters, was much improved in CS2 (you could move several points, not just the 4 corners).
If you are just doing some photo work, CS/2/3 should do just fine, even PS-7.

Main thing I'd look forward to is the content aware scaling, some of the 3D stuff (which only comes with extended, which is like $300+ more), the GPU acceleration and some of the image zoom features (smoother zooming, apparently, ability to rotate canvas to work on it without having to rotate the actual image, a grid shows up when zoomed in REALLY CLOSE, some other things).
>> Anonymous
>>296995
Huh, can anyone point me to where this content-aware scaling is? I have CS4 Extended and I can't find it anywhere.

I got around to installing CS4 today and used it for a couple hours doing my normal retouching work.

Content aware scaling is fucking silly. I would never seriously use it.

The clone stamp tool now shows a preview of what you're going to stamp as the brush cursor which is fucking awesome on so many levels. That alone is worth the upgrade for me.

I tested CS4 out tonight as well.
It runs fucking god awful for me.
I enabled GPU acceleration, and it helped some, but redraw times were shit. I went to nudge the picture, and had to sit and wait for it to do it. It was like working with a remote session, or lots of lag.
Didn't much like the new layout, either. The default full screen no min/max/close buttons. Navigator is no longer top right, its now a, er, fly out menu thing. Default window behavior is maxed, where I like individual floating windows.
Having tried it for 15 minutes, I'm gonna pass on it. Glad it was just a trial.

Wow you're new to photoshop then.
One of the key features that Adobe pride themselves on is how customizable the working layout in. And this is the same for all their products. They are known for it.
