120 color negatives Anonymous
howdy /p/

would it be any cheaper to develope my own 120 color negatives, rather than having the shop do them.

and if so, what would i need to do this?

devtank, thermometer and chemicals.

oh, and a some place you can make completely dark for loading the film into the tank.

add: many many chemicals and a very accurate thermometer. It needs to be within about 1 degree or less of the proper temperature to be accurate.

And my question to you is, have YOU done the C41 process or are you just reading stuff online?

The process isn't nearly as sensitive to temperature as most people say it is, unless you are going to do color prints in the darkroom and how many does that?

If your planing to digitize it doesn't matter if the temperature is a bit of and the colors shift a bit, you wont even notice since you have to do some processing with colors and contrast anyway.

and the "many many chemicals" bit.
All you need is a developer, and blix.
Compared to BW this is the same number of different chemicals.
Also, you can buy complete C41 kits.

Dammit, asshole.

This makes me want to try developing my own C41. I can't afford that shit right now.

Fuck you.

OP here,

i'm reasonably adept at developing 35mm negatives.

a freind of mine has a lab set up specifically for black and white 35mm processing. she has an enlarger as well.

is it a similar process?

Yes, I use the same equipment for both C41 and standard BW.
Just different chemicals and different temperatures.

If you want to do darkroom colorprints you'll need special equipment and be really careful with the temperatures during the devprocess. I guess this is where the whole "oh lawd half a degree off, I'm fucked" comes from.

well, if i make color negatives can i scan them to my computer? will they look decent?

Yes, they will look just as good as if they were developed at a real lab.

I develop all my BW and C41 rolls at home and have no problems, could give you some examples if you want. but really, as long as you don't fuck up to much and provided your scanner doesn't suck, you'll get great results.

Now develop some rolls and spread the word, C41 is doable at home!
