Hello /p/! This is my first time on this board. I usually lurk /k/ and /v/. I've gotten into photography recently, and I want to buy a new camera. I have a budget of ~$700 and I'm looking at a Nikon D60 with 2 lenses that Costco has for sale. It is about $700. Is this something good to get serious in photography with? I've also got this old Minolta Maxxum 3000i film SLR. Might I be able to use the lenses from this on the D60 and vice versa?

The picture is from my old Kodak C743 that had its screen cracked when I put it in my pocket one time too many.

this should be an interesting thread

proceed

Sigh.

Maxxum's lenses won't fit on the D60, but they will fit on Sony DSLRs. D60's lenses will not fit on the Maxxum. D60 is generally considered to suck shit here, because it won't autofocus with many of Nikon's lenses - are you planning to buy new lenses anytime soon?

get a used d50 with a 50mm 1.8 prime and save the rest of the money for when you know what you're doing.

Get a Sony. It'll use the lenses you have now, and it'll be better than the D60.

There's a poster here, Butterfly, who's an expert on the Minolta/Sony system; she'll be able to tell you what model to get. Just flag her down in another thread if she doesn't see this.

I wouldn't call him an expert on anything to be honest. More like rabid fan, far from "expert"

OP here. I only have one Minolta lens, the stock one. It's an AF Lens 50. I've also considered buying a Canon Powershot G9. Would this be a good choice?

No it wouldn't. It's way behind a dSLR and a used D50 is around the same. I agree with this guy>>180676

same price I meant.

OP here. So why is the D50 so much better than the D60? Really, what is the best DSLR in the price range of ~$700?
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.

D50 is better because it autofocuses with more lenses than the D60, which doesn't have an internal autofocus motor.

D60 beats it in every other way though so really they both suck. Get a D70/D80 or go Canon.

Actually, the build quality of the D50 is better than D40/x and the D60. But overall D60 > D50 > D40/x although they're all shit.

>>180777D60 > D50

uh, why?

the d50 is that odd version where nikon put some "pro" level things in it like the extra LCD screen and 1/500 sync speed

just for the simple fact that it still has the af motor, it's > d60

unfortunately, it's noisy as fuck at high ISO

>>180791
Who cares? Noise is just part of the medium (to crib something from Salgado talking about grain) and it's still cleaner than film.

6 MP vs. 10 MP on the same goddamn sensor

i'll take my chances with the 6 MP
>> Anonymous
>>180795

Yes, but it's much newer. Sensor technology has evolved, so it's entirely possible for the D60 to equal or better the D50.

OTOH, it would've been better if they had taken the advances and made a better six megapixel chip. Not for less noise, but for more DR.

D50 has more chroma noise, but there's not a big difference whatsoever.

OP here. Well, I only plan on using the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX VR Zoom NIKKOR Lens and the 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX VR Zoom NIKKOR Lens included with it. Will autofocus work with these?

The D70 D80 is too expensive. What Canon cameras can offer anything better at about the same price of the D60?
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>180832
Yeah they'll work (Nikon lenses will work if they have AF-s in their name) but you're missing out half the fun of an interchangeable lens camera.

I don't remember what the D60 sells for but Canon's equivalent is their new Rebel XSi (in US)/450D (elsewhere) and their older XTi/400D. The XT/350D can be found used and it's good too.

I've never really used an SLR, but is autofocus that much of a need? Manual focus doesn't seem too difficult. Also, wouldn't I be able to use any Nikon lens with AF in the title? What about lens adapters?
>> Anonymous
>>181152
Manual focusing is a piece of cake if you have a camera with a good viewfinder.

The D60, 450D, etc. do not have good viewfinders, unless you use the LCD screen's live view as a viewfinder, in which case you can't get much more accurate than that. Although I have no clue if the D60 or 450D or whatever has live view.
