Nice picture.
How did you manage to take it?
I'm quite an amateur and every time I try I'm either too slow or it just looks like shit.

Thank you, but there is no art to it. Just patience and determination.

Chose my spot and ran sequential 5 second exposures at f 8.0 and iso 100, same as this second photo.

Tossed many (many!) misses.

Also, those settings gave the color satuaration and contrast I was looking for on my particular camera (Nikon D80). Took much experimentation with the variables to get there.

DSLR's are not all the same, you may need to "play" with the variables until you capture the effect you are looking for on your particular camera.

Haven't tried it myself, but I heard of a bit of black card stock and the shutter set to bulb on a tripod. Just yank the cardboard when you are ready. Holding card stock is easier than getting eyestrain from the view finder.

My problem is that the lightning is always outside the camera frame. I'm probably too close to the storm, though.

If you're using a DSLR, your only investment is time.

When an active storm comes around just pick your spot, keep shooting, and trash the misses.

Or you could use a Canon P&S with a CHDK script.

I saw that your photo had a 15 sec exposure.

What did you actually script i.e a sequence of 15 sec exposures, a sequence of varying exposures, f-stop bracketing, etc?
