hey /p/

I'm going back to college soon and need a new camera.

I've been thinking about getting a digital SLR, but I'm not sure. It's hardly the ideal college camera, but I love the ease of zoom/focus they have (not a complete photography noob), and will surely be using it for school projects (i'm in a design program).

so, my question is: anyone have any decent camera ideas ($700 probably maximum) that I could look into?

RebelXT runs around $450-$500 so that should leave you enough money for some lenses and accessories.

Nikon d40 or a used d50.

Possibly even Canon's 350d

DLSRs are very expensive, and from my experience, rather annoying. Shoot film for photography. For point-shoot things the Canon powershot SD750 will work

D40 or a K100.

Your experience differs from that of the vast majority of the photographic industry.

Adding another vote for the Rebel XT.

>K100.
Signed. This has built-in IS and isn't a damned Sony, either.

OP here, thanks for all the tips.

I'm stuck between the D40 and RebelXT. I'm liking the D40 price and the SD memory capability (I've got loads of unused SD cards laying around, as opposed to zero CF's), and am (likely) not enough of a photography pro to see the benefit of the XT over the D40. What makes you so quick to recommend the former?

The ability to autofocus with fast, cheap lenses.

There's a 50mm f/1.8 available for the XT for about $70. Nikon doesn't make any lenses faster than f/2.8 that'll autofocus on the D40.

get a cannon Rebel XTI don't bother with the Nikon turd shooters

umm, sony bought out konica minolta(part of it, at least.) they use a bunch of km's tech in the a100. i picked up a km 70-210 'beercan', and i love it.
the a200 is rumoured to be available in the near future, along with a pro-grade dslr.
i like the sony system(and the zeiss lenses. of course) and can't wait for the new dslr models to arrive.
of course you gotta use what you like, and i just happen to like sony at the moment.

Are you a Nikon user trying to sound like a complete blathering moron to try to get him to buy a Nikon with reverse psychology?

should make that Pentax K10D
- weather sealing (and sealed lenses coming out SOON)
- image stabilization/shake reduction
- can get a steal of a deal online (Amazon, eBay, etc.) AND the next round of rebates is starting (though Pentax's website doesn't currently reflect this)
- the size of the camera won't make you feel like some little girl when taking shots (I say this as a female)
- you can get a great deal on lenses when people are swayed by the C&N crowd and decide to sell their *ist cameras or when the K1000 owners decides to go digital and, again, are swayed by the C&N crowd... and new lenses are coming out! (the kit lens is much higher quality than Canon's or *gasp* even Nikon's)
>>65841
- since you're not a n00b, you can most likely deal with the lack of "scene modes"

I was reading up on this camera yesterday, and I'm deeply impressed by it. Pentax has always made great cameras, but they don't have quite the marketing departments that Canon and Nikon do. I have a D40, and I love it, but that K10D is awfully tempting.

don't get me wrong... there's nothing wrong with Canon or Nikon, but their owners are starting to sound like the Leica crowd or Mac users

I think the lack of marketing will help the consumer because it would force Pentax to be competitive and offer high-quality cameras and glass (my economics background is catching up to me)

I doubt anything beats 18-70 f3.5-4.5 DX. It was 199eur new.

PS Kaught, would you mind answering two somewhat out-of-the-blue seeming questions?

What was the pimp you did those portraits for like? What was it like working for him?

I saw a calculation that, if one shot ten rolls of medium format film a day, one of those would pay for itself (processing + film) in nine months. An average 120 photographs in a day? It's easier than you think. So the price isn't as obscenely high as it seems.

they were nice i suppose, no complaints. It was a little degrading.. I do feel like I'm better than that(taking pictures of prostitutes). but hey, the pictures are pretty crazy, and I'm talking to a gallery tomorrow about getting a couple in, see what kind of response I get before I do a real show.

most prostitutes are sad people, and therefor tough to sit there with a grin and try to make them smile.

IMO anything that requires electricity to function is a piece of shit. i have yet to come across an affordable dslr lens that demonstrated a good depth of field (f-1.4, 2, 2.8) for the subjects that i shoot. but thats just me

am I, like, the only person who manually focuses the lens anymore?
>> Anonymous
>>66935
I almost always manually focus, except at extreme telephoto lengths. Usually, MF is more accurate until the lenses get really long.
>> pskaught
>>66939
auto focus is great, except low light conditions. if your camera can do it, set your focus screen to only certain areas, that way there isn't a general guess being made on focus.
