Dear /p/. I am currently a sophomore in high school, and next year I will be starting the IB program. The IB program has 2 year art course that I'm going to be taking. Over 2 years, we're to pick a theme, and focus all of our art around this theme. I've chosen to do graphic design. My school has said that they will reimburse me for any graphic design software I purchase, so I ask you /p/ what software should I get? I plan on expanding my graphic design to all sorts of different styles..I don't want to limit myself. What software should I request? So far i'm asking for:

Adobe Photoshop (the latest release
After Effects

I'm also looking for a site that will help me learn photoshop (I'm a total noob atm) could you guys make some recommendations for some "how-to" websites as well?

Uh, After Effects is for video work. Are you sure you want that?

For graphic design, you'll want CS3 Design Premium, which is an $1800 package, though you can get a student deal for I believe $600, which is a fucking steal. All of this is assuming you want to do this legitimately, and not just head on over to the Pirate Bay.

Thanks. I'm gonna be doing a small amount of video work too...I forgot to mention that. Do you have any book or website recommendations for learning how to use this software?

Take a class. There's really no better way to learn, especially when dealing with something this complex. Your local community college will have very inexpensive courses that are likely to be pretty decent.

Oh, and if you're doing video stuff too, then you realize that After Effects is not at all a complete video solution, right? You're gonna need something for general editing like Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.

Christ dude, they're really paying for this? Where do you go to school?

Graphic design isn't an art theme. Do you understand what it even is? Before you go ahead and completely self learn and expand it to all sorts of "different styles" in two years I'd try and grasp the concept of what it is. If you really want to learn design, you have to put limits in place or it will become way to open ended. To be honest you don't even really need software at the point you're at, it will probably be more detrimental if you plan on perusing it post-secondary. However I'm sure you'll high school teachers will want nothing other than photoshopped 5 filters minimum super ipod illustrations.

Photoshop
Illustrator
Dont even bother with video until you have a complete grasp of those
