Hey /p/
I'm thinking about getting a dslr soon.
Someone is selling a nikon d40x w/ 18-55mm kit lens/2 batterys for $550, is this a good deal?
Is this even a good camera?

Can you guys recommend me some decent, entry-level dslr's?

cnet gave better reviews for the canon rebel digital XT
can you tell me why the sony a200 is better?

because Butterfly said so, ignore her.

Nikon D40x isn't a particularly good camera, but $550 is a good deal if it's in pristine condition. Although there isn't much reason not to get an used D40 (non-"x") for even cheaper and spend the remaining money on lenses or beer.

I found a nikon d40 for $400
and a canon rebel XTi for $560

what do you guys think?

A rebel xti is fine too.

Both are good entry-level dslr cameras, but I think the d40 is better balanced. The Rebel XTI has a plastic body and feels a little light to me, but it still performs well.
Really, op, since this is your first dslr, either camera will get the job done. I'd say take the better deal financially, or handle each model in a store and pick the one that "feels" better.
Happy shooting.

d40 is plastic too lolololol

What canon does not have a plastic body besides the 5D?

XTi has a better selection of autofocus lenses. Has a few other advantages, too, but the lens compatibility is the biggest one.

Heeeey Daytripper, what's up? You really can't go wrong with either the D40 or the Rebel XT/XTi. However I'd suggest the Canon because if you get the D40 you have the limitation of getting lenses with built-in autofocus motors (basically limited to AF-S lenses).

at the current prices,

both the XT and XTi are cheaper than the D40 and D40x so the whole argument of CHEAP BODY+BETTER LENS for the D40 is shot

Everything except the Rebel line.

not sure where you're getting at but uh

every low end camera will still have a steel chassis but the exterior is plastic

it's not like these thing fall apart at the slightest touch sheesh

your camera body will be long outdated before it ever breaks

Additionally, all cameras have delicate components that require to be placed and coupled with precision to provide good image results.

Metal body or not, you're a fucking idiot if you treat your cameras like shit.

are you agreeing with what i said or not, i can't tell

if you drop it or just use it like an idiot, of fucking course it will break

but your sensor or mirror will probably give up long before you can crack open the body

I'm agreeing, the shell isnt going to break, other stuff will get messed up sooner if you dont take care of it, regardless of the type of body.

Some people support metal bodies too much on the idea that their cameras can take a harsher beating, which isn't quite true. It can stop functioning correctly just as quickly without the exterior breaking, that's all.
