Hey /p/,

Tell me what you think of my choice of gear:

I was in the school photography club for two years, and now as a grad present, my parents will buy me a camera. Now, the camera the school used was a Rebel XT, which just felt like a toy in my hand. And now I'm thinking of getting a Canon 50D Body; 70-200mm L IS f/4; and a 85mm f/1.8 (I'll be using this camera for mostly portrait and sport photography).

Attached is a picture I recently took of my school driveway; editing done only in Adobe Lightroom 2 (colour adjustment).

Why not get a 5D?
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
Go for it, you'll have fun, grab a 50mm too just cause they're cheapo.

I've read that the 5D can be a bit slow for sport photography. Also that would be asking for $800 more :S to an already large sum of money.

Also, is full frame worth it? What are the pros and cons of full-frame?

Which 50mm do you recommend?
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY

i'd reccomend the 1.4, but the 1.8 is pretty much just as good and only $100

Yes, full-frame is worth it.

I picked up a new Canon 1.8 for $80. At that price its a no-brainer.

because the 5D is fucking horrible for sports?

-no crop (which is a BAD thing)
-not as fast
-worse af

-You can crop
-You don't need to take 6 frames a second
-Focuses better than my old 30d

I think a 50d would be better than a 5d mk1. Better high ISO, better FPS, better screen (for what its worth) weather sealing etc.

in crampdish quaters (ie in a normal house room you struggle to get more than just the head in the frame.) you may find the 85mm pretty long for portrait work, but combined with a 50 1.4 (if your getting shit for lasting a long time this is a better, sharper option than the 1.8, especially if your not paying for it) it would be great and I don't see any of that gear limiting you in the future, apart from maybe a wide for the odd landscape.
