okay i have a d40. kit lens. polarised filter.

what's the next lens i can/should get?

i know i probably wont be able to autofocus, but it has to meter. i'd like to get into documenting/photojournalism/street photography or portraiture. will a 50mm prime be flexible enough for everything? if so, which one? and it HAS to be dirt cheap...like srsly.

also, how do i faked bokeh? any special techniques or just a blur tool?

50 1.8. 110 bucks.

On digital, the equivalent to the classic 50mm for street photography is the 35mm. They cost more though. Pretty much anything will meter, it's only some of the older, manual-only lenses that won't. The 50mm is usually recommended for full-body portraits though.

the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 or the 50mm f/1.8 D?
the former is cheaper, but im assuming it wont meter... any equivalents from sigma?

also, what sort of cheap attachments can i get for my viewfinder to pimp it up? any alternative's to katz eyes?

If your definition of everything is portrait, then yes.

image stabilization? or VR as nikon calls it right?

A 75mm equivalent in my experience is not the crazy-versatile lens it's made out to be; I think a lot of its reputation comes from everyone cashing in on the thrifty-fifty thing to get their medium teles. I've always found the classic ~90 to be best for most things.

OTOH, I do think it is the perfect workhorse length for shooting concerts, speeches, etc. For some weird reason, no matter what angle or distance I'm at, it seems to work to get good shots. Obviously they'll be different, but they'll always work as well as I can make them.

Just my experience, could be entirely idiosyncratic, and obviously if you're on a really tight budget the existence of a fast medium tele at any length for $110 is a great thing.

As for another lens, a 35 like a guy said or a 28. IIRC 28/2.8s are usually the second-cheapest lens in the lineup, and (again, more subjectivity) 42mm equivalent is a nicer normal to shoot with than ~50mm equivalent. And for what it's worth, it's pretty much the "perfect normal" of the diagonal of the sensor that looks the closest like human sight.

no i dont think my lens has VR, i just held my breath and propped my elbows against my torso... only clear one out of three.

thanks for the input, is there something that can magnify or improve my viewfinder?

So I was at at a elementary school the other day drawing a picture of a mountain that was in view from there. I had my camera with me and took some pictures around their jungle gyms. I like the way three pictures came out so I made a tytych.

Katz Eye and a magnifying eyepiece, forget what it's called, but Heavyweather had one for his D50 and had very good things to say about it.

im not quite sure what you're going on about. a telephoto will probably be too expensive and 42mm primes are rare it seems.

1) Medium teles, between 60 and 135mm equivalent. Fifties on DX are medium teles.

2) 28mm is equivalent to 42mm on a crop. If you're not sure what I mean by "true normal," for some weird reason it works out that if you measure the sensor diagonally from corner to corner, and make a lens in that length, it'll come the closest to representing the way the human eye sees space. 50mm is ever-so-slightly compressed, etc. On DX sensors, this is 28.somethingorother millimeters.

It doesn't matter in practice, of course, and doesn't make it best, it's just to give you an idea of what 42mm equivalent is like.

i see, so a 28mm lens on a digital SLR is the equivalent of a 42mm on a film SLR(35mm)?

i'll probably get a telephoto when i start earning(unemployed student, living off parents, etc..) but meanwhile i think it will be great practice for me to run up to close to my subjects with a prime...right?

Yep and yep.

The sensor on Nikon DX is 1.5x smaller than 35mm film, so you multiply whatever focal length by 1.5. E.g. 28 gives the same view as 42, 35 as 52.5, 50 as 75.
