Last year I bought a Pentax MX. It was a nice camera as long it lasted.. the camera started developing some problems during winter. I thought maybe CLA would fix them. Well, it did, for some time. Now the camera finally gave up, and so did I.

Of course I could have bought another MX, but since I have only 50/1.7 for it, I thought what the hell. My digital system is from Nikon, so I started looking what film gear Nikon has to offer.

Fxxx series were a bit old, so I next I considered F80/F90X/F100 cameras. I nearly bought a F90X for 150€, since F100's were more expensive.

Then I happened to look at the prices of F5. ~300-400€ shipped o_O Cheaper than D40... didn't need to think about after seeing those prices :)

Does anyone here in /p/ use these old boat anchors like F4/F5/1V anymore?

Also, I have to get rid of all this film too... which won't happen without a camera. I've bought all kinds of cheap (1€/roll) film to fill my fridge :o Film photography is a vicious cycle, you just need to buy film x to try it out. Then film y. Suddendly company a stops making some brand of film, you hoard a stock for rest of your life...

Well, at least it's cheaper than buying a new digital body every 2nd year.

I did the math and digital is around 10x cheaper than film. The price per shot is just price of a digital body divided by estimated shutter life in actuations then price of a canister of film and developing divided by 36.

I do love flawed logic. how many DSLR users are going to use their body until it ultimately wears out? Very few indeed I would think. With film, if you want a higher resolution image, you just load some slower film. With digital, you have to buy a whole new body/back. also, film processing is a lot cheaper if you do it yourself, rather than get it done at a lab.

when do you _ever_ need more than 8-10 mp

for my million dollar a year job doing pro fashion and magazine work. r00fles!

I make about $200/month from my stock photography so i would say yes.

I've had a photo printed at 60x40 before, the 8mp of my 30d just weren't enough to give me the quality I wanted.

you obviously need a hasselblad h3d 39 because you're a pro like that

I never said i was pro. I just gave an example as to why you would want more than 8-10 mp.

Who wouldn't?

Same people who buy a new cellphone cause its the newest shit on the market or people that only got the body as an 'until then' when they can get or need features found in a more advanced model.

I doubt I will. Perhaps. It depends how long it takes to wear out, and what comes out as well as what my photography budget is.

If I switch to full-frame soon enough, how would I wear out my current DSLR? Of course, I'd just give it away to the girl, but still.

Also, "wear-out" needs to be defined. Do we just mean wearing out the shutter? If so, I'm probably going to succeed at that within 1-2 years of initial purchase. Four years tops.

F5 is godly camera!

No.

The F2 is better for not needing batteries and for being in a normal rectangular body, and for a designed-for-MF viewfinder. Same for the F, but the F2 is better than it.

Everything about the F2 applies to the F3, except the battery thing.

The F4 is better for having its cheap-lens-smashing motor and being in a normal rectangular body.

The F6 is better for having a more advanced autofocus system and having a normal rectangular body.

F5 is the worst of the Nikon F bodies. Not a bad camera, but still.

F5 is the greatest

I have an F4s that I've been using for many years. It's one of my favorite cameras and gets my vote for the best 35mm SLR ever made.

F5 is made of win and wrought iron.

F5 can withstand a nuclear strike and still work like a charm.

Theres at least one tripfag at /p/ who shoots with F5 regularly.

I believe its family man. I really want one, but I keep getting sidetracked by lenses and more recently a canon setup (GASP! I shoot both!).

This week I've got a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 for my Nikon, Canon Elan 7, ef 28-90 (shit lens is shitttttt). Next up is the 28-135 IS hopefully, if I dont buy a PS3 first, Metal Gear Solid, fuck yeah. Also scored a dozen Kodak 400CN for 2$ a roll.

When will /p/ realize that the old mantra about entry level DSLRs (one of the few things we get right here) is actually applicable to lots of stuff? The F5/F6 are great, as are their contemporaries like the EOS-1 series and the Maxxum 9. And then as you step back in time, each and every company put out awesome pro level cameras (as long as they tried, which didn't always happen).

Don't buy any consumer shit if you're going for film though - pro stuff is just way too cheap these days and lots of companies did make big mistakes in their consumer lines.
