Rangefinders?
I'm looking to get into street photography and ive been looking at http://www.flickr.com/photos/moaan/sets/72157594388332602/
so... i did a bit of reading and found the Canon 7 to be pretty rare...
Basically I just want a rangefinder with a 50mm prime.. any suggestions /p/eople?

btw, I currently use a D70 but thought it wouldnt be suitable for street.. also thought I wouldnt be able to get the same kind of colour/vividness unless it was film... please correct me.

The Canon 7 isn't rare. Checking eBay would show you that you can pick up one for around 200, and a Canon 50/1.8 for 150ish or less.

It's a great rangefinder to start with, along with some of the earlier Canons like the P or VI. If you want something more modern (metering in body, autoexposure), get a Cosina Voigtlander Bessa R2 or R3, which are sold new with great lenses like the 50/2.5 Color Skopar and 50/1.5 Nokton.

If you're really hurting for money, quit photography. I mean, buy an old Soviet camera like the FED-2, which can be found pretty cheaply with a good 50 like the Jupiter-8 50/2 or Industar-61 50/2.8

Also if you don't want to change lenses you might want to consider a fixed lens rangefinder. These exist with 50mm lenses but I've forgotten them all at the moment.

Fucking kill me now, this world is not worth living in.

You don't need a special camera. Just shoot.

Oh I missed this bit. You're an idiot and you should just go shoot more with the camera you already have.

OP here,
film > digital in terms of DR
also D70 = too big bulky for street photog.
also - please show me example of getting a RAW file to output as vivid and powerful in light/colour as some of the films without fucking up histology.

No, it's not too big for street photography. You're too afraid. No camera will take that away. Grow a pair and take a picture of a stranger, motherfucker.

Seconded. After you start snapping strangers for awhile, you'll get used to it. Find your fucking stones.

I'm didn't say its too big therefore people would be scared.
I said its too big therefore more effort to lug around..
can we just stay on topic of rangefinders..
can anyone give me a direction?
I looked into what>>184004said.
But there are so many more rangefinders...
Also I am interested in film.. so..

Can we just discuss:
- possible options for rangefinder bodies (incl. cost)
- possible options for rangefinder lenses (incl. cost)
- using film for street photography

Yes I know I can use my D70 and my kit lens.. or get a 35mm prime..
but what about film?
instead of just telling me to go use my D70, tell me first why I shouldn't get a rangefinder..
thnks

I have a Konica Auto S, it was dirt cheap and it takes extremely sharp architectural photos. It's great as long as you don't use it inside.

You shouldn't get a rangefinder because you're unwilling to use what you've got already to take the pictures you want, and have this fucked up belief that buying a new camera will solve your problem.

I told you about choosing rangefinders already in my first post, and if you have any specific questions after researching someone will probably answer them. If you're really so spineless just buy a goddamn Bessa R2 and a 50/2.5 Skopar from Cameraquest.com and thank me later (also mail it to me once you decide you need to buy new gear again because your photos suck)

A cursory look at the flickr link you posted shows me nothing that couldn't be done on digital. Film does have a certain "look" to it a lot of the time, but it's certainly not needed for street photography.

Exactly. You didn't try. Go out and give it a shot for a couple weeks, and then report back.

I use my D70 for macro and landscape..
but ok, I will go out and report back in a couple of months when I've got some shots

..oh and also just one last thing..

Why is that guy (flikr link) shooting with film? any particular reasons other than the obvious?

I clicked the thumbs to check. Here's the first shot:

Gee, the caption says "RICOH GR Digital" I wonder what that could mean.

Personally I use film because I like the feel of the cameras better (gearfag right here), as do many others. I think the more common reason cited for using film is a specific "look", which may or may not be good for street photography - it's certainly not automatically better than digital.

It IS too big, but it shouldn't stop you from taking photos in public.
