Canon PowerShot A590 IS Anonymous
hi, im planinng on buying a cheap photocamera for making pictures from vacations, trips, and just from random stuff (so pictures to keep, nothing really artistic, maybe later)
i was thinking on buying the Canon PowerShot A590 IS , it costs about 140€ and I can get a free 2gig memory card & a camerabag for that price too... Is it worth buying?
If it's not, what other low budget camera should i get? max budget is like 200€ but if possible a bit lower :P

link with specs: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_a590is.asp

also, since i'm a complete noob at this, got any tips on what settings i need to take photo's etc?

thanks :)

It's fine, but if you can get it (don't know what the prices are where you live) this one is better:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_a650is.asp

It has the same sensor and (I believe) lens as Canon's top of the line compact, the G9, just in a cheaper, less-good body and with a few less features.

Either one will be fine, though.

As for settings, spend ten minutes reading these Wikipedia articles, or their equivalents in whatever your native language is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposure_%28photography%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shutter_speed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperture
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-number
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_speed

And then your manual. With that knowledge, turn your camera to the manual mode (M) and you'll be able to get the perfect settings every time.

And if you want just a quick tip on composition, even if you're not going for art it never hurts, look up the "Rule of Thirds."

topic starter here, i went to the shop today to see some models in action, i must say the a650 shoots very nice, even with digital zoom at like 3.0 or something (4.0 = noise) , also a bit heavy, but i quite love it (moving screen = fucking nice)
menu was quite easy to understand too, for a noob like me \o/

but i saw the S5 right next to it, for basicly the same price, and it had like double the optical zoom... Can i conclude that its a better lens? fewer MP tho...
didnt try it out because the fuckers didnt have batteries for it -_- (it was even heavier too, lol)

next to that, ive read something about depending on what memory card you have, your max fps changes for movies... Is it the same for photo's or arent they affected by that?

only thing im doubting now is wether or not to spend 300-350 (with accesories) where initially i planned to spend only 200 :P

A650 > S5

>even with digital zoom at like 3.0 or something (4.0 = noise) ,

Don't use digital zoom. All it does is crop it and then stretch it out to be the size of a noncropped file, which degrades image quality.

>but i saw the S5 right next to it

Pros: Better handling IMO, an EVF (little LCD inside the viewfinder instead of the little glass tunnel, more accurate), a hotshoe for a flash.

Very mild pro: More zoom range. For taking pictures of just general stuff you'll never, ever need more than maybe 200mm, and that's pushing it. Between ~28 and ~105mm equivalent is all most people could ever find a real use for. Shorter and longer is for specialists or people with peculiar tastes.

Cons: Heavier, bulkier, smaller sensor = more noise.

>better lens?

They're probably about equal, although it's actually the other way around: the less zoom something has, the better quality it tends to be.

>fewer MP

Six megapixels is all 99% of people need. National Geographic just asks their photographers to shoot with a camera that does at least six megapixels. Unless you plan on making big prints of your stuff, they'll all be fine.

anyway,thanks for advice, lets hope it's worth the money :) (314.90 euro's, got the camera,a bag,a 2GB mem car of 30x and a 2gig sandisk III extreme :) )

got any other tips on basics of photography btw? i checked those wikkipedia links but basicly it all comes to "more or less light makes your pic" :D

Not OP, but I saw an A720IS on clearance section earlier today--very nicely priced ($140). Now, I have just purchased an A590, and I can return it and get the A720IS instead. Should I do it--meaning, will I get a better quality picture than A590IS if I sprang for 720IS?
