Start up Canon EF Lenses Anonymous
in preparation for the 5D MkII, I'm going to need some full frame lenses. I shoot primarily scenery and sometimes people. I haven't felt the need to shoot tele much (except maybe the lunar eclipse).

Already have a 50mm f/1.8, recommend me 2 lenses to start with.

I'm thinking 17-40mm f/4 L for the wide/scenery end
and debating between
24-70mm f/2.8 L vs. 24-105mm f/4 L

I'm attracted by the f/2.8 for the low light/fast shooting, but the MkII has such ridiculous ISO options it might not even be an issue. Plus if i get the 24-105mm as a kit, it'll probably be cheaper than If i had picked the lens up alone.

Get the 24-70, because that and the 50 cover basically everything you'll need to do.

For lenses outside that range, pick up an M42 adapter and get old versions. For instance you can pick up a 200mm f/4 Takumar for around $150. If you don't like it, sell it; if you do, congrats, you've got a 150-dollar lens that performs as well as any modern prime.

Thanks for the tip about the Takumar. The 24-70 is a heavy/big sonovabitch, too, but where is the trade off for that f/2.8...
