I would HIGHLY suggest a used Nikon N70 with a 50mm f1.8 (I'm thinking that some intro phography classes require film cameras, not sure tho).

I find it odd that you're majoring in photography and don't know what sort of camera you should buy...

i would certainly hope that my professor doesn't expect me to know everything about it i mean im fresh out of high school and it something that i have wanted to do but im new at it? is that wrong should i change my major, i dont think so instead i think i should strive to learn more about this subject and not have people question my mmean or hint that i might be trolling in on /p/ board...

Well, I wasn't actually doing that. But if the bra fits...

How do you know you want to major in it if you dont know anything about it? To be trendy and artistic?

Usually you have to submit a portfolio to show you're at least decent at it. Go buy a cheap slr at a thrift store or something and put like 10 rolls through it.

Lol..

I wonder how many people like you were at the lineup for portfolio review at the college i applied for.

Lololololololol, hopefully lots, meaning I've got a better chance of getting in.

It's actually a pretty good combo for a first year student. The D40 makes a nice file, and no one will ever tell you that the 18-200 is a bad lens, it just makes a few compromises in terms of speed, though again, it has VR, unlike the 18-55 f/3.5-f/5.6 piece of shit I started out using. It's WORLDS better than any kit lens around, and plenty to get someone started. He can move up to big boy lenses if he decides to stick around in the major and advance forward. Interestingly, the D40 mounts older, and thus more, lenses than any of the Nikons that have AF motors. It's in no way a bad camera, nor does it make sub-par images.

Being a photomajor myself, the best thing to do would to wait to buy a pricier camera until you get into your first photo class. Go out and get a cheap SLR,and start shooting like crazy, but wait to get anything too advanced.

There are two reasons for this. If you get a cheap camera without a ton of automated features you'll be able to concentrate on apetures, shutter speeds, blah blah blah. Also, once you get into a class you'll be able to talk to your proffessors, and get their opinion, as well as your classmates.

If your applying to a school that requires a portfolio review beforehand and you don't have a lot of decent work, good luck. If they don't require one it's still a good idea to bring a small selection of work just to show you're serious about it. Also, avoid all possible cliches. Srsly, just stay away. You will get laughed at.
