TRIPODS....

Why would I buy a tripod from a camera store at an outrageous markup when i can go to 'the tire' and get one for $35?? as far as i can see they both offer the same features and the crappy tire one is designed for use with tools that are presumably heavier than a camera, making the tripod sturdier with lighter objects?

obviously I haven't had an epiphany, and someone on /p/ will immediately shoot it down, but i just want to know why these aren't suitable for photography at a fraction of the price.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
The "real" tripod is a lot heavier and sturdier, which means it'll wiggle a lot less. The little cheap ones are better than nothing in a pinch, but they're not really that great if you need absolute minimum camera movement.
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
It's the whole brand and "Professional Value" thing that makes it expensive. Same reason why all camera gear and Macs are expensive. I call it ignorance tax.

wouldnt a tripod built for use with heavy tools wiggle a hell of a lot less with a relatively light camera attached to it?

I know i'm forgetting the first law of Canadian Tire (Mastercraft is Chinese shit) but it looks pretty sturdy. I'm going to check out the store tomorrow and have a look at it (Thanksgiving in Canada today)
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>274426
What makes you think that that tripod is designed for use with heavy tools? Heavy tools get mounted to things like tables, not to tripods. The only "tools" that go on tripods as far as I know are things like surveying gear...

Those $35 tripods are designed for small P&S digital cameras and video cameras.
>> Project !dashI8UpO.
>>274426
Try wiggling it around yourself I guess. See if it "bounces". Only tripod I've got is a cheap plastic and aluminum one. Not bad for long exposures. It won't wiggle as long as nothing touches it while exposing. Even holds well against wind. A small nudge however will be enough to make it rock back and forth for a moment.

And if you think tripods are expensive, look at the heads. Sheesh.
>> Anonymous
those $20-$40 tripods WILL NOT hold a decent dslr, I had one of those in the early days and it couldn't even hold a 300D with kit lens, it may look big enough but they are just CRAP.

I'm now a happy owner of a Feisol carbon tripod, 0.9kg + ballhead weight and sturdy as hell, enough for everyday use, if you want to use heavy weight lenses it might not be enough though.

ah I forgot, image related.

canadian tire =/= hardware store. They might sell tools and renovation stuff, but there's also electronics and small appliances and stuff. just because it's made by mastercraft doesn't mean it's made to be used with tools.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
If you've got a heavy lens and body combination then the cheaper heads tend not to support it and start drooping. Very annoying and pretty much useless when that happens. Never mind all the other issues about vibrations, clunky adjustments and so on on top of that.

Cheap ones have their place, but the more expensive ones can be worth it if you can afford them. It's usually recommended that you spend the extra to get one good one to last you a long time (perhaps a lifetime) rather than spending a lot more on incrementally better tripods that you're never satisfied with.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
money skimped on a tripod is money spent on repairs. i bought a wal-mart tripod once for 40 bucks.. it dropped a camera six weeks in, cost me 150 bucks to fix it.

i went out and bought a $275 bogen manfrotto head/legs combo a few years later, and now i never use it because it's too goddamn heavy to carry around. plus, i needed it a lot less than i thought. i only ever use it for portraits and night shots, which i basically never do.

but i did find a guy selling my exact tripod on my local craigslist for 125 bucks. it's weird. tripods are always cheap on craigslist. everything else that gets listed is usually a ripoff or posted by some first time amateur who thinks that his 10D is still worth 90% of the 1500 he paid for it 5 years ago.

I have a AUD$50 'Velbon' tripod. It's a little flimsy but it certainly holds my camera steady if it's left alone (using remote or cable). I would definitely like one that was a little sturdier and more portable, but yeah, you don't have to spend much to get a product that provides acceptable results

it's true, never had to use a tripod ever

but i guess you need one if you're one of those flickr faggots who is interested in doing light writing or traffic long exposures

no one needs a tripod for real photography. oh wow, great moment during a party/wedding let me pull out my tripod from my backpack, set it, screw mouting plate and/or attach plate, hold still guys, position camera, hold itttttt, put the right settings and then take a picture. you're just doing it wrong. but most of you have never interacted with people for your photographs so pulling out your trusty manfrotto carbon fiber tripod must be second nature to you to take pictures of your cats to test your lens focus or sharpness.

and if you do landscape shots, then that's just boring.

in conclusion, if you have to pull out a tripod or rely on one for normal photography, you're doing it wrong
>> Anonymous
I agree tripods mostly just get in the way for me. I do work for my campus newspaper and I''d much rather carry a lightstand than a tripod.

why, just why would you need a tripod for portraits?

when i do portraits, i'm either in my studio with 3 lights or on the move with my on camera flash with bracket. a light burst that lasts 1/10000 of a second freezes any motion.

Almost all of what I shoot is documentary or just semi-abstract stuff I see that makes a nice picture. I don't like using tripods too much, even on landscape shots in those veins; it's just more fluid and natural for me to make the little framing adjustments one does in the hand.

But do I own a tripod? Fuck yes, I was fortunate enough to get some ultraexpensive Gitzo with a great head for free, and I use it when appropriate. Slower landscapes, concerts when possible, some studio portraits, when I just feel like it. If I didn't get lucky like that, I'd buy something similar. It'll last longer than I will, for a one-time investment I can use with any camera I'll own between now and forever (unless I ever eventually talk myself into a view camera) the cost would be a trifle.

A new $25 tripod every time I take it by a loud concert and the speakers shake it over and something breaks? Are you kidding me, I can't afford that.

tripods have absolutely no use in 90% of photography, or for inepts and flickr faggots for the aforementioned reasons

this is why /p/ fails at anything related to lighting. there is simply no one here capable of using it and hiding it.

flash photography is harder to master than no flash photography because it's hard to understand and replicate every time. a properly lighted scene, you'll never suspect there was flash used.

see this anon thinking flash = front on flash shit like beethy does. learn to use light, it works wonders

>> Apparently you're such a pro you've never heard of shutter drag before. Look it up sometime.

um what? why would you even drag the shutter on a tripod? the scene would just expose properly for the background and not have any motion effects

and dragging the shutter is so played out anyway

I was looking for a tripod a while back, and the limited range of options - oh sure, there's lots of brands but they're all basically the same thing - led me towards looking at monopods.

There was the idea though, "What if I need to have the monopod hold the camera by itself for a moment?"

So I started looking at monopod-tripods, but they don't look much less cumbersome than tripods.

I've actually come up with my own design for a monopod-tripod that, when "folded up", looks like nothing more than an ornate walking cane. The centre unscrews and extends up, locking with a screwing motion. The top unscrews to reveal the 1/4 mount, and umbrella mount - explain in a moment.

The legs, for tripod duty, fold out from the main body. They're thin in design, but made of stainless steel, and extend out independently so uneven ground is not a problem. All the actual weight is held on the centre pole that the legs fold out from anyway, so it should be able to hold a considerable weight.

The centre extension grows long enough to reach just over 180 centimetres in height, and with the placement of the tripod legs fully unfolded and extended, should make quite a serviceable umbrella - with additional spike screwed into bottom and removable triangular weather shield held on top.

As soon as I can get access to a small workshop with a lathe, mill, and drill press, I'll be making it and publishing all the info online.

Any /p/'ers got a machine shop?
>> celotil !AN26.8FkH6
I explained that a little screwy, but basically the design is for a sturdy monopod-tripod that looks like a cane when not in use - sooo I'll look a bit like a dandy, but I don't care - and can serve as an umbrella when the weather gets shit house.

Actually, if anyone's seen anything like that online I'd love to know where.

>>actual weight is held on the centre pole that the legs fold out from anyway
perhaps you should learn basic physics - what makes a tripod stable is that there is weight on all three legs.

On top of that - if you think all tripods are the same or are very wrong. You need to go into a store that has lots of them and play with them a considerable amount of time, all the while thinking about how you intend to use them. I ended up with two tripods - one for local work - a Tiltall, where I removed the head and added a ball head, a very expensive carbon fiber Silk, that I use when travelling, and a Verbon Neopod 6, carbon fiber monopod. A monopod is nice but anyone who thinks it takes the place of a tripod is crazy

I think you need to think a little harder before offering your opinions, or just stay silent.

What makes a tripod stable is that it has three legs. A monopod can lean in any XY axis, a bipod can lean along one axis, and a tripod has no lateral movement simply because two of the three legs always stabilise the third.

A quadpod, or a table, would hold more weight, but it wouldn't be any more stable than a tripod and there's the possibility that one of the four legs is set up at the wrong length, allowing it to wobble.

My idea is a monopod that can stabilise itself with tripod legs, all joined together so they unfold the same but are independently capable of extending to any length for use on uneven ground.

And I didn't say all tripods are the same, I said they're all the same basic thing. Given the simple job that they do, they're all too bulky and unwieldy, lacking a simple elegance that would allow a person to carry one on him on a whim.

I have the same beef with the monopods on the market, which is why my design looks like a walking cane - simple and unobtrusive, not altogether out of place when walking about town, yet serviceable as a monopod or tripod when it's needed.

your pretty narrow minded if you can't think of situations where a tripod would make the shot better. I don't light paint or any of that shit, but I do shoot at night with relatively small aperture and low iso. If you can't see that a tripod makes a better shot with 1 or 2 second (or more) exposure, your an idiot.

Different types of photography need different tools - anyone older than 10 and more experience than a few hundred shots can figure that out. Are you really that much of a noob?

ITT nokin can't hand hold 1/100 and needs a tripod to take photos

and amateurs who take traffic long exposures at "small aperture and low iso" who think tripods are the greatest things since sliced bread

when you actually start making real photography, you'll realize how stupid using a tripod is
>> nokin !ozOtJW9BFA
>>275478
no one said that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, No one is preaching about how exquisite the tripod is and how amazing it is. all im saying is that its a nice tool to have. you take pictures YOUR way and i'll take them mine. why is that such a hard concept for you to grasp? Its not like your argument was going to make me throw my tripod out into the streets and jump for joy that i am no longer tethered to the confines of a heavy piece of metal.

you're not even a good troll
but since you brought it up. I only shot about 5% of the time with a tripod - day or night. I can shoot whatever anyone else can shoot without one, but I am not so good that I can shoot what the best in the world cannot, without one.

BTW - what is "traffic long exposure"?

im defending my use of a tripod, not preaching about how everyone should be using one, unlike you who has decided that no one should be using a tripod with a 35 mm and everyone who does is instantly a failure at photography. your preaching no hands and im dedfending my use of a tripod. wait let me restate that WAS defending my use because your argument is so unrealistic and your position is utterly nonsense. your main statement of anyone using a tripod is not a real photographer is the most asanine thought i have seen on /p/ in a while. you just dont get it do you...your trying to support your claim with NOTHING AT ALL. you have nothing to back up your claim, nothing to back up your attack on the people who use tripods. and me? well im just sitting here defending my ownership of a tripod.

google no cropping zone, one of the best macro photographers around, not that i respect macro photography, uses the mpe extensively.

he does not use a tripod or any kind of rig. lights, lights and lights. amateurs can never understand how important lighting is.

they start off with tripods, then buy large aperture lenses. later on, they realize the mistakes

Seriously, man. The only winning move is not to play. You're not going to change this guy's mind because I doubt he actually has anything against tripods. >> well im just sitting here defending my ownership of a tripod.

i completey understand why you would need a tripod when you can't properly hand hold 1/100

>>275545if your exposure time is more than 1/30, you need a tripod = you need a tripod

IS/VR/OS/SR/VC, and depending on your focal length, you can probably go as low as 1/10 if you're wide enough.

and proper holding technique works wonders. 1/30 really isn't that slow at all. brace yourself against a wall, use your chest

Obvious troll is blatantly obvious. Stupid position + arrogance + "oh, the tripfags are playing the troll card again" when he's called on it. Other little cues too. It's just this one guy who has nothing better to do with his time than troll 4chan. I know it's hard, man, but you've just got to let this argument go.
