/p/ i have $1500 to spend on a dslr, what would you choose? i was thinking the nikon d80.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
Pentax K10D. Get more features, save more money, get some of those awesome Limited lenses.
>> Alex
does that lens come standard with it?
>> Anonymous
no that is not the standard lens

D80 or used D70

This

Seconded.

On second thought the Pentax is probably a nice choice as well. I don't know about the supersonic lenses, though.

1500USD?
used D200, but I use a lot of older lenses and my D70 is frustrating. If you're not interested in legacy equipment, D80 is probably the best bet.
>> Anonymous
D70s w/ 18-200 VR lens would be nice.
>> Anonymous
actually the lens in the picture 18-135mm is the DX lens that is included with the costlier bundle.

don't know about the pentax, but a friend of mine is looking into it.

In either case, I suggest extensive research into what you buy; as well as finding out what cameras your buddies own. This will allow you to borrow lenses!
>> des
>>54058
going out to fondle bodies is probably better than research. none of the dslr crop out there right now are real dogs.

Finding out which systems are availible for lens borrowing is very good advise, though :)
>> Anonymous
op here none of my friends are into photography so i will not be borrowing lenses from any one. i'm pretty sure i'm still going to go for the d80.
>> Anonymous
buy a D50 and use the $1000 you've just saved on lenses/filters/whatever.

Honestly, aside from the amount of megapixels and maybe a feature or two, I really don't see much difference between one camera and another. I've been taking photos with a 4 megapixel canon powershot for a while with perfectly fine results.
>> Anonymous
Used D200 with 18-70. Should be perfectly doable since same set is €1300 in Finland :P
>> Anonymous
>>54081
Good decision, if it feels good in your hand, you won't regret it.

>Honestly, aside from the amount of megapixels and maybe a feature or two, I really don't see much difference between one camera and another.
Right. If you just ignore the tiny sensor, terrible high ISO performance, slow speed, lack of a glass TTL viewfinder, lower resolution, lower image quality, inability to switch lenses, difficulty of manual focusing, and lack of easily-accessible manual controls, a point and shoot is pretty much the same as a dSLR. It's all just different features.

(Pro tip: The features between different cameras can be significant, especially between digitals)

>>54087
oh it does feel good in my hands i went to the store to check it out and it felt awesome. too bad i have to wait to the 12th to actually own it!!!!
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

>>54089
Oh. Er. And that being said, now that I've mocked you a bit for your secondary point, I agree with your main point that it's better to buy a cheap body and expensive lenses than vice versa.

Pentax K10D. Tis fucking sex for your eyes. It also has anti shake and anti dust built in. Where as the Nikon D80 has naught. Much larger lens range for the Pentax as well. Any single K-mount lens! *drools*
>> Anonymous
Nikon, certainly.

I'd get a D1x if you can. Fantastic bit of kit, had one for about 2 years now, 'tis awesome.
>> Anonymous
Pentax have horrid optical quality- Nikons have been around for ages making lenses and cameras, Pentax... haven't. Anti-dust hardly works, anti-shake is another way of saying 'We didn't work out how to get the smoothing right on our optics processor', and the things fail after a few years.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>54103
This is the fourth dumbest thing I've read on /p/ today.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>54103
*facepalm*

Pentax makes a tremendous camera, and their limited primes are literally unequaled at the moment. Even with the Hoya takeover, I'm still going to make the move over to a Pentax K10D because frankly, it's the best camera for the money out there. More features than a D200 at a fraction of the cost, with incredible, and I mean INCREDIBLE backwards compatibility. Anti-shake works, and works on every lens you mount. Anti-dust works, from every report I've received. The image processing is different than Nikon and Canon's JPEGs, said to resemble film, but the whole point is moot if you're shooting RAW-- which any sane photographer should.

Just because Nikon and Canon are the top dogs, you don't have to drink the fucking kool-aid, dumbass. Nikon makes great cameras. Canon makes great cameras. Pentax makes great cameras. Look at the system, and choose the best option for you. There are subtle and not so subtle differences to each.
>> pixle !YlHXuPBxBQ
I'd personally go with the d80 instead of the k10D.
>> Anonymous
>>54104
Only the fourth?
>> Choamsky
>>54104

I'd hate to see the other 3.
>> Anonymous
>>54100
Yup. And not just any K-mount lens, but also screwmount and medium format lenses with adaptors. And the light meter actually works no matter what lens one mounts on every last Pentax DSLR, unlike most bodies from a certain other company that I won't name (coughnikoncough).

>>54103
You are a complete fucking idiot. Pentax has been in the optical lens business since 1919, and their current lenses are easily on par with anything Nikon and Canon build.
>> Anonymous
Ive owned a D50 then changed to D200, and later to the D80 and ive gotta say i was more impressed with the D80 than D200, sure its got less features and isnt as fast (fps) but its better to go with the D80 and then get better lenses. Its slightly sharper too. Just get the D80, then at least you wont regret it afterwards.
>> Anonymous
>>54145
Actually pentax's current lens lineup leaves a lot to be desired, especially in the telephoto range,
wheres its 70-200 f2.8, And pretty much anything past that in the F4 or F2.8 range (they have a 400mm f2.8, thats all i can really find)
>> Anonymous
>>54167
The only problem with your argument is that the camera can take any lens Pentax ever made and any lens made for a Pentax.
>> Anonymous
D80 then lenses of your choosing

This coming from someone who has used nikon for years (sigh my F90X), has a D80, has used a D200 (and a D2), and has used up to and including 300mm lenses (god are they sexy)
>> Anonymous
I'm assuming you're an amateur photographer. Any of the cameras you're currently considering will offer you tremendous room for growth. You will most likely not become limited by the camera in any appreciable amount of time. By the time you get proficient enough at photography to want to upgrade, enough time will have passed for you to easily do so. A good approach would be to pick one manufacturer and stick with them, so when you upgrade bodies (which you most likely will do if you get somewhat serious), you can carry over your old lenses. Pentax, Canon, and Nikon are all great choices. Also keep in mind that you'll need a tripod, bag, and misc. camera equipment.

>>54175
Adding on to my post, I have a Nikon D70, D80, and a Fuji FinePix S5 Pro (bought in that order). The Fuji is basically a modified D200. I'm pretty happy with Nikon and their Nikkor lenses. I think the D80 is a fine starting camera that you won't outgrow for a very, very long time.
>> Anonymous
So the Pentax can vibrate dust off its sensor, so what? As far as I'm concerned, it's just another component that has the potential to fail. A blower bulb is all you need in most situations, unless you do stupid shit with your camera like attempting to change lenses in a sandstorm.
>> Anonymous

Pentax cannot vibrate dust off its sensor, lol. In fact, no one except Olympus can, and even Olympus does a really mediocre job at that.
>> Anonymous
>>54181
I'm surprised Canon's system sucks so much cock, despite theoretically being the same as Olympus'.
>> Anonymous
>>54182
I suppose Canon knows about its system sucking cock, they just put it in because 400D desperately needed at least one marketing gimmick (there were ittle other options since adding shake reduction would've hurt sales of their own IS lenses, and live view is quite tricky)

DO WANT D80
>> Anonymous
LMAO... this thread...well, it sure as hell does not deliver.

You guys obviously dont know what a k1000 was or how much ass it kicked - this is before the days of canon.

Personally, i used a d80 for a few days ( not mine, just borrowed ) then bought a k10d.

Im happy with it, happier than with the d80

( also, dont even get me started with the sony a100 and canon 400d, they are just toys compared to the d80 and k10d )

So, Have a 28-75 f2.8 a 16mm fish eye a few very nice pentax prime lenese, a battery grip and the AF 540 FGZ Flash.

Thats a fair ammount of money invested in pentax in the space of a few months

Not to mention a few old M42 screw mount primes ( that i might mention have focus confirmation and a buttom to press for auto exposure on the k10d )

Long story short...

If you want a D80, buy one.
Dont come here complaing about over exposure or expensive VR lenes

If you want a K10d, buy one
Dont come here and expect idiots to understand a brand other than canon or nikon...

I don't know much about professional expensive DSLR cameras, I went to this website that reviews on cameras, http://www.imaging-resource.com/ They take snap shot on still life and a multi target to test the cameras out. I notices that cameras that uses antishake options have a hard time capturing true blue color the next three images shows it. it's between the xti, d80 and the k10d. I personally like the d80 but it has no antishake option which is a feature i really need, i myself can't decide between the d80 and the k10d
