How much time does it usually take you to work through the shots from one of these shoots?

I shot RAW, 4 4 gig cards- roughly 2-3 hours (and 12 free gigs) to load them into lightroom, 4 hours to go through all of them, an additional two to wait for them to export so I can open them in photoshop and 2-3 for full edits, ready to send back to the model.

According to the Distance this guy was about 160 feet away. So 500mm is pretty fun.

Overall I'm impressed that CA is a non issue, HSM is very fast and accurate, and I can handhold this even at 500mm without much issues.

Zoom creep is a pain for walking around with it, You can lock it at 50mm but thats it.
For Astrophotography I might have to actually stick something on the camera to stop the lens from retracting.

Also for $600 (after taxes) I can't complain, Its quite small for its focal length (roughly the size of a 70-200 VR when the Sigma isn't zoomed in at all).

Lol its complicated to explain, I wish I had an easy to read resource to link to do it for me.

Take a 50mm lens, Now lets say it can mount on
Medium Format
35mm film
And a DSLR (with 1.5x crop factor)

that 50mm focal length hasn't changed, and neither have the properties that go with the lens (DOF being the big one), All thats changed is the size of the sensor behind the lens.

So on Medium format, you have a large sensor that the picture is projected onto. The DOF is still say a foot deep, but the size of the sensor means you see more.
on 35mm film, the size is a bit smaller, so although the DOF hasn't changed, we see less of the picture because only part of the projected image is hitting the sensor
the DSLR (1.5x crop) Is now an even smaller sensor, so it gets an even smaller view of what the 50mm is projecting.

Thats simple enough, but when viewing prints, you can always blow them up to sizes that have little reference to the original sensor size. So comparing the same size "Prints" afterwards, it appears the 1.5x crop is more "zoomed in".
So when crop factors are taken into account, they only look at the equivalent focal length on 35mm film (Because it is an easy to understand standard)

>neither have the properties that go with the lens (DOF being the big one)

Focal length doesn't affect depth of field, but the size of the sensor does. Something about the circle of confusion of the sensor.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>125459

not quite the circle of confusion. it's more about the actual size of the image. it takes a 200mm lens on a 4x5 to create the same size image as a 50mm lens on 35mm. a 200mm lens has a much narrower depth of field, ergo, 4x5 has approximately a narrower depth of field.

vincent's right, though. stick that 50mm on an 8 x 10 or an aps-c sensor, and the depth of field should remain the same.
>> Anonymous
>>125552
No, focal length doesn't affect DOF.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/dof2.shtml
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
     File :-(, x)
>>125573

i've been waiting for you. that luminous landscape link is lulz lulz wrong.

there are three variables for calculating DOF: subject distance, f-number, and focal length.

here's the equation for calculating DOF if you don't believe me.

f= focal length
N = f-stop
c= circle of confusion
s= subject distance
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>125573
Assuming the size of the subject fills the frame the same amount, Which is really a moot point for almost any photographer.

I certainly don't use my long lenses in order to move farther away from something. And I don't buy wide angles because I want to get really fucking close.
Practical purposes sees people obtaining shorter DOF's with long lenses (Birds, people, etc) and Wider DOF's for shorter lenses. (Landscapes, Architecture)
May not be technically accurate to say that a longer lens means a shorter DOF, but it is often the case in a practical sense.

A couple years back when that Luminous Landscape article was first published, I wrote up a bit of a counter-article that refuted it entirely using a little bit of logic, math, and some example pictures. Of course I have since lost that article and am too lazy to re-write it. Anyway, that Luminous Landscape article is full of shit and his own data proves him wrong.

How is it "lulz lulz wrong?" Have whatever equation you want, but I don't see how you can argue with actual photographs right in front of you.

Then it's accurate to say less magnification means more depth of field, or vice versa. Magnification is the independent variable, not focal length. That's the point.

For most photographers most of the time, a longer lens will wind up magnifying the subject more, yes, but it's important to know for when that's not the case, when one gets to choose focal length 100% on desired perspective.

I didn't add anything today. But I hope to be adding a 40D to the collection in the next week or maybe two.

I know someone that knows someone (yadda yadda) that might be able to get me a small deal.

it's lulz lulz wrong because everytime i see that link, it's accompanied by some moron claiming "actually, focal length doesn't affect DOF."

in the very, very rare opportunity that you're actually maintaining exact image size, yes. all lenses give the same depth of field at the same f/number. for the other 99.9999999% of the time, in conditions under which people actually shoot, focal length is the determing factor in DOF, along with subject distance and f-stop.

One more, the independent variable is magnification, not focal length. It takes one extra step of comprehension in the photographer's mind to get that, and knowing that is useful when picking a focal length when that's possible, which it is for anything where the subject is staying put and one's movement isn't restricted.

i can agree with that wholeheartedly. it's also a far cry from>>125573

which i'm pretty sure you didn't even write. i think you're just some guy who got all uppity because i dare say that something on luminous landscape was wrong. i'm okay with that too. what whatever-his-name-is is saying is totally correct, but it's got such a miniscule level of practical application and it's written with such slippery language that it's created this whole new myth in photography that i see repeated many times here and on other boards. ergo, statements he makes on the page like

"A wide angle lens, in other words, will give greater depth of field than will a telephoto. Right?

Sounds about right, but it's not the case."

are, in the end, lulz lulz wrong.
