Hey guys, I am a poor D40 fag and i'd like to get me my first lens/external flash. What does /p/ think, the Nikkor 50mm f1.8 or the tiny SB-400? I'd love to have bounce flash, but I also like the idea of having a fast prime. Help me : /

Get a prime, but get something a little wider. 50 on a crop is a little too tele for most things. Get a 35.

Get used to no auto focus with your prime.

You will have to manually focus with the Nikkor 50/1.8 if you're using a D40. Also, I'd rather save up for a SB-600 because of the nikon CLS possibilites and the fact that you can bounce it in the roof in portrait orientation etc.

Either make yourself a cardstock bounce refelctor for your popup flash, or get the sb-800. the 50/1.8 is hard to focus wide open unless you invest and mod with a proper focus screen.

I've used the 28 f2.8 and 50mm f1.4 on my d40 and it was fun for about 30 seconds. Viewfinder is just too small to bother with that. Save for an sb-600.

Manually focusing isn't THAT bad. Unless I'm mistaken, the little green dot will still light up when you have it in focus even though you're focusing manually.

The 50/1.8 is a really good lens for the price.

OP here.
Thanks for all the info guys. I will probably go for a good flash. But how about the Sigma EF-500 DG ST ? It seems great for the money.
