There's nothing you really got wrong that you could've gotten right, except using a negative film instead of Kodachrome, but it's just... not "Afghan Girl." It's a friend of yours wrapped up in a red blanket posing like the girl. It's more of a good visual gag than a good remake, like if I walked out onto a suburban street, held up my arm with my watch on it, and said I was remaking Josef Koudelka.
Also, it looks like you got the focal length off (McCurry used some 110mm lens, didn't even know they made those before I found out he did) and the girl's finger wasn't showing, and there were rips in her red cloak showing some green shirt with the same color as the background behind them.
