Not too much this year, They kept launching the fireworks into the exact same place in the sky, Made getting good shots difficult because of the overlap. The few that were spread out were usually launched right after a barrage so the air was heavy with smoke too..

I'll have a few pano's from today later, I think a few turned out.

Alas, I won't be getting a DSLR in time for the Fourth this year. I guess, I'll have to stick with my point and shoot and it's blurry firework pics again.

Just use a Tripod, Its pretty easy.
I have bulb mode and a wired remote, so I choose when to start and stop the picture,
What you can do is take a black hat, and set your picture for something like 5+ seconds, and then put the hat in front of the camera and remove it when you want the fireworks to be exposed.

Just do some test shots before hand to see how long of an exposure you will want to take, and then expose the sky properly (so you don't underexpose it or burn it out)

3.7 seconds?

And no blurring on the people?

I smell something fishy here.
>> Anonymous
Usually people don't walk around and bounce back and forth when they're watching something like this. Look at other people, I saw at least one guy's leg blurred.

what>>214902said.

They did turn out sharper than I expected, but when sitting down its not that big of a deal to stay pretty still. Still enough for the light from a firework to keep them relatively sharp anyway.

Nice stuff.... I've found that Firework shots and a 30s exposure with covering the lens etc. can have an even etter effect and lets you really compose your pictures. If it's a small display, ask the organizers for their "storyboards" - there's a special word for them, but i can't remember it now... but if they have them and you can read them, then you can plan your shots ahead of time...

Photo info: taken at the Plymouth fireworks Competetion 2007.

Lens used - 28mm prime, F/11, no af or anything else bause its an aincient lens

dude thats amazing picture, what do you mean by covering the lens though? Something like covering the lens with hand/cap during moments when there are no fireworks and exposing it when the fireworks launch?

Old manual lenses read as f/0.0 or f/1.0 and 0mm.

Whoops
photocross.org = my website I use, But I don't update it that often, just with my more sale-able images.

>>215359
Yup, Sometimes you don't want the trails up into the sky to show up, and sometimes you just don't want to overlap fireworks, so you cover the lens so nothing gets burned in. Just make sure to balance the time exposed so you don't overexpose the sky if there is still light around.

Thank you kindly good sirs.
If you're a Britfag, and like these sort of things, try going to Plymouth on the 12th and 13th of August for the British firework championships 2008 - fantastic, and on the Hoe (yes, it's a bit of land by the sea called a hoe, get over it) you can get some fantastic shots... there's also an old lighthouse called Smeatons Tower which is great for some comps. - plus, there's always a fairground... so you can get some great light trails.

I might put up a thread some time soon with top tips and technique... since July 4th is on its way too
>> Anonymous
Lovely! Took me two 4ths to master the fuse timings of a local firework company. I could mount my Nikon on a loosely mounted tripod head, pan up the spark trail till it stopped and exactly two and a half seconds nail the initial blast you captured.

I have no idea how to get such precise control using digital.
>> Anonymous
Wide lens, medium aperture, 30s exposure with covering of the lens... that's pretty much all that anyone can tell you about the technique... the rest is up you to work out by yourself

Its an absolutely wicked Camera, Everything I love about the D200 with none of the shortcomings (bad high ISO performance, drab colors, inflexible AWB)
Plus it makes a hell of a sports camera with the battery grip!

Even with the D700 coming out in the future I think the D300 is probably the best buy for your buck. I used up to ISO 3200 on my trip to Tofino and had no trouble making 12x18" Prints to sell afterwards.
