Lens comparison of sorts. Wanted to compare what my dads old 35-80mm lens that came with a Canon 1000F looks like compared to my new 18-55mm IS lens that came with my 450D. Not scientific by any means but good enough to see some clear differences. I was surprised at how much lighter the image from the older lens lets in. I tried to keep the apertures close and focal lens same or close. 100% crop on all photos.

OK so my question is. Why is there such a BIG difference in exposure at 35mm? Also is it worth keeping the 35-80mm or should I give it to that dude who asked earlier who chipped his?

for one, your 35-80 is opened up wider in aperture than your 18-55 so it lets in more light so the exposures are off

but more importantly your old lens has flat contrast, from horrible or no coatings because it's older than you probably

It's only half a stop difference so I doubt it would be that much. I could not get the exact same aperture at that focal length on both lenses. I could have changed the zoom a little I guess. But I doubt it would make that big a difference. The coatings and lens general construction sound more likely.
