If you had to choose one of these rangefinders, which would you purchase?

- Canonet QL28
- Canonet QL19
- Russian FED Model 5
- Minolta Hi-Matic 7S
- Petri Model 28
- Voigtlander Vito automatic II
- Yashica MF-2
- Yashica MG-1
- Yashica Electro GSN
- Zeiss Ikon Symbolica
- Zeiss Ikon Contaflex

I'm thinking of going with the Minolta but that's only because it's the only one I'm familiar with. Hey Serenar, where are you?

MINOLTA IS SUPERIOR.
Seriously, get the hi matic.

I constantly see rangefinders at the fleamarket and I always want to pick one up but I dont know which ones are good ones to try out.
>> Anonymous
Yashica MF-2 or Minolta Hi-Matic, no doubt.
>> Anonymous
I googled them all. So it's down to

shutter priority and manual
Hi-Matic 7S or
QL19

or

aperture priority and automatic
Yashica Electro GSN

Oh hai.

Lots of these are great cameras so it's a tough choice, so choose mostly based on condition - make sure whatever you get is in total working condition.

If it were me I'd get the FED because I already have lenses for it (or as a rear cap for whatever lens it comes with). If you're just getting into rangefinders or want a fixed lens one, I suppose get whichever one works with the most manual control. Shutter priority, like many of these have, is rather annoying. Aperture priority is better, and aperture priority with a full manual override is ideal.

The Canon 50/0.95 goes on the Canon 7, a full featured interchangeable lens rangefinder, not on Canonets.

I would want that but, unless I'm mistaken, none of these are like that.

I'm not considering the FED because I'm not interested in an interchangeable rangefinder yet. This is more like a trial buy to check out rangefinders.

>Yashica MF-2
I can't find much on this one. From the little that I did find, it seem almost fully automatic.

hi-matic it is then. stick with what i know

The photographer got that one wrong. Noctilux > M6

Don't get a FED anyway, they're junk. The rangefinder patch is almost impossible to see, and only works correctly with a few lenses.

The three you pinned it down too are all very good.

>>220243
What do you mean?

It's a Leica MP + 50mm f/1.0 Noctilux lens.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.

What the fuck are you talking about?

>>220195
Shit somehow I didn't see your post just above mine. Ignore me then. Congrats on your new rangefinder.
>> noclue !!2yUmAID3520
Yashica Electro GSN would be my choice.
After that i't go for a Voigtländer Bessa R ... then there's just a Leica, maybe MP to get the latest.

I'd also take /p/'s donations via Paypay ;)
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>220367
If you're buying a Leica "to get the latest" you're doing it wrong. Buy a DSLR.

I realize I'm nitpicking an idle fantasy of yours but really people have to realize that a) going Leica is really quite affordable if you b) only buy used but that's okay because c) you'd have to be a fucking idiot to pay Leica's firsthand prices.

It's really not the unattainable "lol H3D" fantasy that people make it out to be.

no problem, that mp thing wasn't means serious in the first place ^^;

The M8 is pretty unattainable, but old film Leica (M3, M2, never checked on M4s or later) are definitely affordable; I've seen them go for ~$300 on eBay when someone messes up and loses hard with a no reserve auction.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>220478
The big bargains in Leica M's right now are the M5 (TTL metering, made in Wetzlar, and a newfangled body design that makes it hated by Leica snobs, driving down demand) and the M4-P/M4-2 (ever so slightly simplified versions of the M4 that are hated by Leica snobs. See the pattern?)

If you're willing to pay a little more, and forgo extra framelines and quick loading, an M2 or M3 would probably be a better choice though.

The only reason an M2-3-4 would ever go for $300 is if there is something seriously wrong with it or the seller is shady.

Those cameras are consistently $700-1500.

>>220511
all it takes it getting lucky with an auction, really. A lot of them sit between $200-500 for the majority of the auction and get sniped up at the end
>> Anonymous
>>220555
Yes, and no matter if you're lucky or not, they still get sniped up. That's how eBay works. They all get sniped up. If you're going earlier then an M3, you'd be better off getting a Contax IIIa.
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>220563
not all of them get sniped up, the correctly listed ones get sniped up :)
>> Anonymous
>>220565
Even not correctly listed ones get sniped up. :) You'd have to be really really lucky to find something not sniped up.
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>220580
of course you have to be lucky, but it does still happen.

I'm gathering funds for a Leica M8.

I <3 Leica.

Well, the only real reason to get an M over any other M-mount RF is the body design of the M3/2/4/6/7/P/8.
