WellI've been not as a photographer but as a soldier. But photographers only goes to "safe" zones so they don't come home with messy photos...

Civilian photographers don't go into hot areas.
Military ones do.

I don't believe you've been to Iraq.
Enjoy your masturbatory worship of the American military machine.

Alone.

Nope I haven't been to Iraq, and yes I have been in the army but not the US.
Served in a war zone though.

My experience is that it is safer to shoot with guns than cameras when youre in the hot zone. But if you got the guts I can imagine its a pretty exiting job.

There was an article in the Sydney Morning Herald a couple of weeks ago about an Aussie photojournalist in Afghanistan who was 5m away from a suicide bomb blast. He jumped out of the vehicle covered in blood and started shooting photos.

His own blood or someone else's?

Photographers are kidnapped and beheaded. Enjoy having no head.

I was a photographer for the norwegian navy during my service. It was ok. I was just happy I could throw away my gun right after all basic training. That way it didnt feel as much like being in the military.

I think it was his own and possibly the person who was sitting next to him in the vehicle (on the side where the bomb went off).

GIS his stuff though and you've got some really nice work. Dude got some amazing stuff by getting too close and paid for it. There goes a Capa medal winner in the making.

I recall a photographer in Palestine who was covering something when he was hit by artillery. Wounded, but kept his shutter pressed while he was falling and got a photo out of that one. I forgot his name though.

I am currently in Iraq, and work with a Combat Camera unit. I run our servers out here, and I believe they have a good amount of stuff sitting on our FTP server. I'll link it tomorrow, when I come back from work, if it's available to the outside, else I will post some stuff that we have here on our servers. Most of the crap we have is of ceremonies though, so you know. Nothing to exciting really.
