SLR, douchebags.

If you want a good camera to learn on and would rather not spend a ton of money I would try to pick up an old Olympus OM series. I started with an OM-2n, it's an awesome film camera, so that means you will learn to compose a lot quicker than with a DSLR. Also, the metering system is really cool. There is absolutely no way you could go wrong with this camera.

But if you want digital and just didn't know you had to specify, go for some sort of Rebel or Nikon D50/D70s. Modern lenses can be very expensive, so specialize in one type of mount so that you can use all of your glass on all of your cameras.

Not OP but...
I have a shitty D40 and need a longer lens than that from the kit at the same time I have limited funds (hence the D40 in the first place).
My biggest worry is that the kit lens will not have enough range to shoot sports and the Sigma 70-300mm lens with the built-in motor seems good, but is using a lens as long as this without VR reasonable? If not then will a monopod help it out?
Also, lighting shouldn't be an issue. I'll be mostly around soccer fields and golf courses and I have a SB-24 flash.
If the light still isn't good enough I can use my 50mm f/1.4 and try my luck with manually-focusing action shots.
I know you hate gear threads so I decided to just hijack what looked like a pretty dead thread instead.

A200 with 18-70 kit lens. It'll cost about $499.

you'll have an extra $200 for a flash or any other thing you want.
