Ok /p/ heres another suggestion tread, Im thinking of buying a new camera, something non professional, like the Panasonic FZ8k... Is this a good buy for 290? or you may suggest anything for the cash.

Yeah i say take the plunge and get it. Alot of folks on here say the Canon S3 IS but they have nearly the same specs.

not so fast. we do canon powershot S3 here.

when i was camera shopping it came down to this, the powershot S3 and the sony H5... designed to compete with one another. the differences between them are so subtle it's ridiculous. to be honest i went with the S3 because it had better video capability and the swing-out and rotate LCD.

as far as photographs, these sorts of things are mediocre. you can get a perfectly good used dSLR for the same price, and that will ALWAYS have higher image quality. i just love my S3 because it's compact and simple and i can record voice interviews on it for my freelance reporter side job while i'm taking pictures with the same exact tool.

I do Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8.

For photography, the FZ8 is a much better camera than the S3IS. I've used both of them extensively, and the FZ8 wins, hands down.

That isn't to say the S3IS isn't a good camera: it is. But the FZ-8 has RAW, a better lens, a better EVF, a better sensor, (for me, at least) better handling, and lots of little things, too, that turn out to be really useful: a DoF chart on the display when manually focusing, a bunch of auto-focus modes, dead spot on auto-white balance and metering, a display mode that will set the inside of the EVF up like the inside of an SLR viewfinder, a free lens hood and a lens hood adapter that takes any attachment meant for a 52mm lens thread, and so on.

I can't speak as to video capability.

As far as image quality, both the S3IS and the FZ-8 are just fine. Sure, one has to manage noise, but it's manageable.

Oh, and to sum up:

Yes, OP, get it.

Thanks everybody... the reason I asked about this particular camera is that I've used the canon s3 IS and I didn't felt comfortable in my hands with it. Anyhow, the panasonic seemed to be a little more user friendly and fits perfectly in my hands, but I was concerned about image quality.

And one of the reasons Im not getting a dSLR is that I love film cameras and the versatile that they are... When Im in for serious photography My canon Elan is always there..

Again Thanks everybody!

I had the same concern, because I had heard bad things about noise reduction in the Lumix series. Then my S3IS got stolen, and I needed a replacement. Someone suggested the FZ-8, so I gave it a try and ordered it from Amazon, which has a thirty-day return policy. I fully expected to be boxing the thing up after a week, if that. I'm still shooting with it on a regular basis two months later.

The noise reduction in the Lumix series -is- horrible. Luckily, it has a RAW mode where there is no noise reduction pre-Photoshop, instead of trusting it to the camera that rapes the quality of what is probably some of the best glass on a point-and-shoot.

So don't use the JPEGs, and you'll be more than fine. If you'd like, I could post some photographs I've taken with it, so you can see for yourself.

To sum up what the others said somewhat: unless you want to do high-ISO (which isn't recommended on a non-SLR anyway), get this camera. It's of course cheaper on top of the better lens etc., too.

Some pictures would be very appreciated.
Dpreview shows some preview pictures but non in low light conditions, and that's the weak spot for the Lumix

Thx again
