I'm "upgrading" in the world of picture taking. I've been using my Dad's old Nikon FG20 since he left it to me, and now I want to enter the big bad world of DSLR's. I'm looking into the Rebel XTi and maybe a D40/50/60? I'm still leaning heavily towards the Rebel. Anything to keep in mind, and what are some decent entry level lenses (under the $400 price range), nothing too fancy.

Suggestions and such would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Pic not related. Taken with the FG, but I didn't take it.

D40x and XTi are the same camera. Just decide if you're a Nikonfag or a Canonfag.

Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8

Seriously? Price difference here is a good $150 (D40x being the lesser in price).

XTi - $585 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/457506-REG/Canon_1236B002_EOS_Digital_Rebel_XTi.html

D40x - $560 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/486460-REG/Nikon_25424_D40x_Digital_Camera_Camera.html

$25 =/= $150

since youre tight on money get the D40 instead of the D40x.

because B&H price is $25 apart doesnt mean its like that everywhere.

I was comparing it on a Canadian website...(and I misread, it was about $100 difference w/o lenses).

I'm sure as hell not ordering stateside.

Yes...

I don't think they would transfer over though

they will. they might not meter if they're old, but that'll just help you understand exposure.

They will. Get the Nikon. Also do yourself a favor and do a little research, you should already know the lenses are compatible.

From my research, the film SLR was E series whereas the DSLRs use F-series.

Either way, I'd avoid the D40/D40x as these do not allow AF with older lenses (the camera itself lacks a pin).

Nikonfags have always told me every Nikon lens from the Jurrasic Period until now will work on a Nikon DSLR.

E series = economical series, as opposed to Nikkor.

it should still be an F mount and mount fine. it may not meter properly on some bodies though.

Anyone in this thread considering getting a Nikon DSLR should consult this first.

Nikon makes good cameras and lenses, but their reputation for backwards compatibility is more myth than reality.

How is it a myth? I can mount and meter with any unmodified Nikkor from 1977 on, and any Nikkor from 1959 on with a $25 conversion. Heck, one of my pre-AI's didn't even need modification.

plus, how often do you really run into pre-ai lenses? most of them are corroded to shit, and you can pick up the golden era 1980's ai and ai-s lenses for dirt cheap anyway.

realistically, the only real fuck-ups in the whole nikon line-up is the G designation (which only matters if you're trying to mount a modern lens on an old camera, not vice versa) and the DX format, which only extends to ten lenses out of 400.

other than that? don't listen to canonfags.

I'd recomend Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, alas it'a mini-tele on APS-c.
