I have an old SLR [Canon AL-1] and i go to school that offers unlimited darkroom services.

Is it worth the hassle to develop my own film and buy a scanner, or should i save up for a dSLR?

also, are there any advantages of film over digital?
>> Anonymous
If you're just going to do film because you don't have the funds for a dSLR, then save up for a dSLR.
>> Anonymous
i could either, but i was wondering if there are any desirable qualities only found in film photography
>> Anonymous
also,

i was thinking that FD lenses would be MUCH MUCH cheaper, allowing me to build up a nice collection. And its not like film is going to go out of style anytime soon, rite?

It's just a different medium. Anything that is doable with film can be done with digital (except DIY stuff, like pinhole boxes and whatnot). Film had the advantage of having a bigger resolution than most digital cameras, however, that advantage is dissipating - soon enough, you'll be able to buy consumer-level 20megapixel cameras, which is about the same resolution film can provide, after being scanned, without losing too much quality.

The only redeeming factor for film photography is just nostalgia -- doing it like the old masters did it. If you're interested in that, do some tinkering with it, and soon you'll realize that doing the same thing in photoshop in 5 seconds is much more productive.

OP here.

im just realizing how expensive dSLRs are, and i am a college student. Would mastering my slr transfer over to the dSLR when i switch over in a few years?

Yep,
only difference between film and digital is, obviously, instead of there being film behind the shutter & lens, there is a digital sensor.
The main aspects are basically the same

Be like /p/ and buy an expensive DSLR and take photos of your cat.

>>261345
Obviously. Since you already have the gear for it, just go with film for the time being.

yeah, thats what im going to do

instead of cluttering up /p/, ill ask here: how reliable is ebay for buying FD lenses?

so you try to make digital look like film? you already lost by doing that, might as well just use film.

using film daily, as we speak.
I ment; I've got nothing better to do - other than mess around in photoshop, whilst I wait for ma tuna pasta to cook in the microwave*

why? it's cheaper and faster to make digital look like film.

i'm just playing the devil's advocate here, since i shoot probably 50% film now (used to be 99%, but then i got my d300).

Get the fuck out, you arrogant faggot.

Compared to film, digital is still in its infancy and has yet to fully develop. Even as early along its development path as it is, it still surpasses film in terms of versatility, cost, and speed.

The only appropriate response to this is slackjawed, amazed sputtering. Followed by the realization that I have been trolled.

>bawww bawww bawww

I actually have a work, money, and time (oh shi-) so yes I can pretty much use the method I like more, as you can use the one you like.

Nothing against digital, I just shoot with film., because I like it.

I prefer film because it has a timeless quality. Plus I like the satisfaction I get from developing my own film.

to all of the faggots in this thread, both pro, anti, and ambivalent, there are such things as hobbies you know. the kind where you're not weighing the pros and cons of what you're doing, rather, you do it because you enjoy it. For me, and i'm sure many others, using film and working in the darkroom are enjoyable passtimes, while other people prefer to waste their time in the digital darkroom. this doesn't make me right or wrong, but i will say that watching your print come to life on the paper in the developing tank is more fulfilling than sitting in front of a computer and clicking the mouse around. Don't get me wrong though, digital is great and the obvious choice for work/etc due to costs and convenience.

but of course, this is /p/, so LOL FILM GB2STONEAGE FAGGOTS.

You do realize this shit is more trivial than anything else on /p/, even wanking/shitting over the S2 which none of us will ever touch, let alone own?
