i'm not super happy with this shot i took tonight, can anyone help me figure out what i could have done better?

i had a hard time finding a white balance i like and i blew out the highlights trying to get the beams of light to show up well. any suggestions?

Have you tried black and white? That way you don't have to worry about white balance. Generally, I don't notice overexposure as much in black and white, either.

Be sure to use channel mixer so you can balance the beams and everything else.

here's one more from that night, a panoramic.
again, no exif, pulled from my flickr - but if i recall, they were 30 second exposures to get the smoothness in the water and f/16

i think you would enjoy the shot more if the lights came from a gap in the skyline. pushing through the city. Also because it represents a gap in the city skyline.
