Canon: $500 70-200 F4, F4 IS, F2.8, F2.8 IS.. all being produced and sold new NOW.

Nikon made their own sensor for the D3 and D300 now that Sony has started to compete with Nikon in the DSLR department.

BUT....Canon uses Sony sensors in their 1D/1Ds-Mark III. Don't believe me? Open one up if you have access to it, look at the circuit board attached to the sensor and you'll see S-O-N-Y in big bold letters. (I worked at a camera retail store and one of the techs alerted me of this 'anomaly')

In the end, Canon's camera bodies are technically superior, and Nikon's glass and lighting systems are tops. It all comes down to what the photographer prefers.

The D3 sensor is Nikon "designed" but outsourced to an undisclosed source. Supposedly Kodak.

But for the rest of us, Sony makes the following 7 sensors.

1. CCD 6 MPx
2. CCD 10 MPx (A100, A200 and A300)
3. CMOS 12 MPx (D2X)
4. CMOS 12 MPx Exmor (A700)

The sensor isn't the whole of the capturing system, bodies across manufacturers using the same sensor don't even use the same ADCs. Nevermind further down the pipe.

Agreed.

Actually, Sony makes most of Nikon's older sensors (while the new D2H D3 ones are still a mystery) along with the sensors for Canon's point and shoots.

I'm curious about Canon's auto-focus issues with the 1Ds. Rumor has it they pretended to fix it but never really did. Any thoughts?

Who's running the commercials with Ashton Kutcher making an ass of himself with the 'easy to use' D40?
>> Anonymous
>>185256

The D300 was made directly to compete with the 40D. It came out after the 40D was released, so it obviously has a technical edge.

And the 5D is, like, five years old.

iirc, Canon's marketing usually consists of showing where their gear can be used or where they hold a somewhat big market share (or at the very least make it look that way, but is probably true). They dont show you shots done with them, they show you where it's being used. (sports)

Nikon, on the other hand... keeps doing that "Amazing Nikon" artsy shit, suggesting that by using a Nikon, youre automatically generating artsy shots. It says nothing about the camera, and it suggests that the user's skill and artistic vision is all due to the guy using a Nikon, which is utter bullshit. Whoever took the pictures could very well do with any other camera brand. Nikon makes it look like it's because of their Nikon tag.

Canon's marketing is generally more concrete, saying where they're used a lot. Nikon's usually suggests their cameras turn you into artists magically. Which one is more hype? You tell me.

>didn't have a 10 zillion dollar price tag, I would buy it. >_>
Come back after you see Nikon's 10 zillion dollar price tag for every one of their lenses.

fuck sensors, it'll all come right in a few years.

more importantly, Nikon missing out in the mid-end segment: they only make crummy f/3,5-4,5 zooms and pro 2,8 zooms. for an enthousiast like me, they miss out by not having competition for the mid-end f/4 zooms. 17-40 f/4, 24-70 f/4, 70-200 f/4, etc :(

no idea about Canon primes, I think their primes are more modern as well. Nikon is using too much old tech from the Nikon-Ai/AiS era. Thats why I'm buying so much Ai/AiS glass, current AF glass isn't better optically and has a crappy plastic build :(
>> Anonymous
>>185320
whats wrong with old tech ai/ai-s?
perhaps why nikon hasn't improved much over them because they are as good as it gets anyway. What do you want them to add? ED elements in the 50mm f/1.8?? does that make it 'un-modern' thus not up to your standards?
>> Teus !QbSstcPD6U
>>185363
Ai/AiS is still great, thats why I'm collecting it.

its just that some zooms are sharper than primes nowadays. current Leica optics are sharper than most SLR stuff, and that's not because of a SLR <> RF differences.
>> Anonymous
>>185320

i expect the sensors to be "full frame" at a decent price in 5 years or so.

i suppose the dlsr market in inherently limited buy having to conform to 35mm standards.
