Oh yeah the big patch that ruins the picture is smoke from a smoke machine...
>> Anonymous
I like the smoke. Keep the smoke. Maybe just a little less in the front since it distracts me from the bassist. I'm guessing they didn't let you use flash?
>> hV !!Uu8NMl1et5d
>>245114
Yes they did but flash + smoke = hell of a photo..
>> Anonymous
I've completely given up on trying to take photos of gigs, 99.5% of the time security treats flashes like devices of Satan (Never mind those on people microscopic digicams or cellphones) and long exposure inevitably results in the image looking like a blurry indecipherable POS.

This came out pretty good, though. Shame it wasn't framed a touch to the right, as is the head of the bass is cropped off.
>> hV !!Uu8NMl1et5d
>>245122
Actually the smoke is covering the rest of the head, the image has been cropped if I didn't there would be half a guitarist in the picture too.

Really like both of these, although I think the first could use a bit more contrast like the second, deeper blacks.

Haet gig photos with flash though.

Oh man, these are some slow ass lenses. Gotta shoot band stuff with 2.8 or faster, if you can help it. If you can't, shoot wide and close, you can handhold that better and maybe get some cool pan stuff. Easy to pan with wides, and it lets you shoot in time with the music. It's a cool experience.

Pic is from way the fuck back when I just started, only had the kit lens. This is omfgearly shit. But man, I don't try this enough at gigs now... I bet I could pull it off better.

>>245219
One day, this'll be in one of those "exhibitions" on Magnum's website: "Caleb Miller: Early Works."

Though I have to disagree about only going for atypical stuff if you have to shoot a concert slow. I've done it with a point and shoot (ISO 400 max, sometimes 800 if I really had to, f/2.8 being wide open) and it takes a fuckload of effort and good technique (timing and handholding), but it can be done. If one can set a tripod up (out of people's way, of course), that helps for longer stuff, but I didn't find it needed (with optical stabilization in the lens, granted) for wide, normal, and mid-tele.

Why I was shooting a concert with a point and shoot is a whole other story, but let's not go there.
>> Anonymous
>>245224
How you managed to get a tripod in intrigues me more. Photo pass or wut?
>> Anonymous
>>245226
No formal photo pass, but II'm close friends with one of the guys who was performing, and knew the others socially.

Venue also wasn't some big amphitheater or something with bullshit photo policies of "three songs and you're out" or whatever. I don't even think they had a photo policy, except, "Hey man, send me some of those!"
>> Anonymous
>>245229
I don't think I've ever gone to a gig that didn't have Nazi-esque photo policies. Even the tiny 100-person capacity shows I've been to are all "IS THAT AN SLR WITH A FLASH?! BE GONE, SATAN!"
>> Anonymous
>>245233
Really? Wow. Either the venues my friend's band and these other bands I've played at were really great, or the ones you're shooting really suck.

Now, I don't use flash shooting concerts, though. Not my style. Tried it once, and to paraphrase Cartier-Bresson, felt like I was bringing a gun to a concert. Just really out of place.
>> Anonymous
>>245236
Then again, it could be that I was with the band(s).

Other places I've been to have asked me to put the camera away, but I've been let in and let to shoot if I stayed out of people's way, too.
>> Anonymous
>>245236
I rarely actually use the flash for gigs - I can understand that having sharp blasts of light probably dosen't help the performers at all. Even if I leave it at home I get shit for it from security. One time I had had a VIP pass for a gig since one of the guys performing was a family friend and I some dickwad in security FUCKING RIPPED THE CAMERA OUT OF MY HANDS when I went to take a picture, even with my pass on hand I needed to actually prove my connection to the band after the show to get it back.
>> Anonymous
>>245239
Shit, that sucks.

When I've been with the band, I've always been given carte blanche to go backstage, in front of the stage, whereever, and to shoot the whole show.

One of my favorite places to shoot is from right behind the speakers, always out of view from the audience, but right there. Loud as all fuck, but nice and close.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
     File :-(, x)
>>245239
This is why you go early to shows, show your pass to a person in authority, make sure you're approved and everything is in order, and THEN you go take photos. If the security dude in the pit is the first one to know you're accredited media, you're shit out of luck. Gotta do your due diligence. I often get away with not asking permission and just shooting... but ffs, if you have an official pass, you still go through official channels. That's how access works.

I'm not scolding you, these are the hard facts that I had to find out via humiliating trial and error as a college newspaper shooter. It's even worse for me because we're so borderline legitimate... we've got a daily circulation of 60,000 and one of the best regarded college papers in the country, but people look at me like I'm from the moon when I try to get access sometimes. Anyhoo, just some glistening nuggets of gleaned knowledge.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>245242
Truth. Depending on the speakers, you might even be able to climb on'em and get a different vantage.
>> Anonymous
>>245243

Other guy ITT here. I also might not have had any problems because I almost always shot the whole thing, from setting up to taking it down to anything afterwards. Except twice where I was running late, at venues that already knew me from other times, I never just showed up at the last minute as just another guy and started shooting.
>> Anonymous
OP: Great work, both of them.

>>245155
That he's shooting on a Samsung (=rebadged Pentax) helps with hand shake, but avoiding motion blur at low shutter speeds is mostly attentiveness and timing: just getting in tune with the rhythm of the scene (easy with concerts: it's the music) and pressing the shutter when shit isn't moving.

These are also usually actually the best moments: not the most dramatic, of course, but like>>245146, a strong, quiet, emotional involvement to them. That goes for everything, not just concert pictures.

Going wide and close is definitely one of my favourite styles of gig photography, even if I am shooting with an f/2.8 lens.

Is the lighting good enough at these sets to not get any blurring? I mean, shooting at 1/30th a second, you've got to be lucky to not get any blurring at all. Shots came out good though.

Actually, looking at the OPs pic, the musicians hand is blurred a little but the picture is still nice and clear.

Woah, have you really done that? I can't imagine climbing the speakers as a photographer. It'd be like out-rocking the band and the crowd at some gigs.

Also, I'll take any opportunity to whore out this photo.

yes thats what im wondering. shooting at anything slower than 1/40s usually results in motion blur for me. so at night i have to take 3 shots of the same thing on average to get a decent one.

Yeah sometimes you can get lucky and catch them in a moment where there's little movement. I try to stick to 1/60 and above.
