Ok, I need some help with calculations..
Last year I shot some photo's at a korfball tournament. But horribly "failed" due to bad lighting and not very much knowledge of camera's. Since then I learned some more about my own camera, and switched from my parents Olympus E-500 to my own Nikon D80.

Now, my question is:
Last year I took shots at F3.8, 200 ISO and got a shutter speed of 1/30th. Which appeared to be way to slow.

Now, if I use a F1,8 50mm and shoot possibly up to 500 ISO, what kind of shutter speeds would I be able to get with the same amount of light? Is there a way to calculate/estimate this? Barely have time to practice in the hall. Tournament starts Saturday morning.

Flash, small DoF or high iso, thats your choice. ISO800 shuld be OK with a little NR.

Unless they're closer than three or four meters away, you won't have a small DOF, whether you use 1.8 or not.
The DOF diminishes greatly over distance.
Ya the background won't be pin sharp but it will still be recognisable.
The only problem you might have is slow focusing with those lenses.

Well. f/3.8 to f/1.8 is roughly 2 stops and 200 to 500 is 1 and a half so your shutter will go from 1/30 to 1/360 I think.

btw, what shutter should one use in sports? Just in case I might have to shoot sports one day.

Not about a thread general, but about a thread like this yes. Shit's so retarded...

Die in a fucking fire btw. Tripfag homoboy.

I'd think about 1/100th should be perfect. Depending on the sport of course, but assuming you won't go to a chess game or something.
Though perhaps 1/60th could suffice too. Trial and error ftw?

Why so serious?
