they'll cover that in the first two weeks. be patient and go shoot some fuji superia from wal-mart to warm up.

Read the manual. If it didn't come with one, http://www.canonfd.com/pdf/a1.pdf

it's actually quite a simple camera.

Careful when loading the film. Make sure to stick the leader into closest slot, not over the spool. As long as the rewind knob turns when you advance it, you'll know it's loaded well. Also it makes a certain noise when advancing. When I tried using this camera for the first time, I ended up not shooting a few rolls because I was retarded and didn't load them right.

Otherwise, it's a great camera. I mostly use AV mode and it usually meters spot on. It's far more accurate than my XTI in that regard. The only downside is that its shutter speed tops out at 1/1000 seconds.

I have a subpar sigma kit lens, the Canon FD 28mm f/2.8 and 70mm-210mm Macro and recommend both these lenses as they are cheap and offer excellent optics.

i have the same camera lying around. It was my great-uncle's. Is it worth it to get it back in working order? Im pretty sure its fine, just needs some cleaning.

also, how much are the lenses? might be a cheaper route than buying a dslr

Problem with it is its FD mount which is a dead end investment. The 50mm f/1.4 is cheap though. I have that together with the 70-210 f4 and 24 f/2.8.

this is really not a problem - for time when you insist on shooting wide open in bright light you can get an ND filter.
