I've been thinking about getting into photography for a while, and I recently decided to pursue my interest bought a new camera for it. This was the first picture I took. I've read a few things here and there, but I was really wondering if /p/ would be so kind as to provide me with some general knowledge. Anything and everything is appreciated, from advice on photography in general to types of lenses/companies to look for. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry too much about buying lenses just yet. You've got a very good kit to start learning the basics on. Start getting out there to take pictures is the main thing.

dpreview (got a huge database and glossary of terms), Strobist (lots of stuff on lights, flashes, home made things, etc) and photozone.de (lots of gossip, tests and reviews) are popular websites (they'll show up near the top if you google) with a lot of information on the site or forums. You can pick up a lot of the basics that way. There are plenty other websites out there that you'll stumble across or other will mention too.

As for photographic techniques and basics, you could pick up a cheap photography book from a library or buy one online. Doesn't matter if it is for film or digital if you are wanting to learn a lot of the terminology, the techniques and styles of photography.

It's important to read the manuals and practice and test settings and shooting styles all you can. Practice makes perfect, remember.

Nearly forgot this one: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/ good source of info and explanations on all manner of things.

If you've anything more specific you are stuck with, then the boards here or elsewhere are of help for that.
