What lenses do you have again, and what's your usual kit?

I know you've got 20/2.8, 28/2, 35/1.4, 50/1.2, 105/2.5, and 180/somethingorother, but what were the other ones?
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>276213
All correct. 300 f/4.5, 55 f/3.5 macro, and a 135 f/3.5 that I still haven't used.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>276213
Oh, and in terms of usual... I usually walk around with the 28 or 35. Lightweight versatile reportage kit is the 20, 50, and 180. I think I could do 90% of what I do with a 35 or 50, but there are times when it's nice to get extra wide or extra long for the situations that demand it.

D2X, D50, 24-85 2.8-4 AF-D, 50mm 1.8, 55-200 VR. SB-800, SB600.

Either a 70-200 2.8 VR or an 80-200 2.8D, and a 12-24 f/4 DX coming soon.

For those who sneer at the little 55-200, it's pretty crummy, but only because it doesn't allow a high shutter speed in low light. It's still capable of taking some pretty cool stuff. Pic related, taken last weekend.

I only say it because last time I mentioned it on /p/, a bunch of people started yelling that it was worthless and might as well be thrown away.

It actually performs surprisingly well, though, only real problem is the small aperture. AF's reasonably fast and it's pretty sharp, which is more than I expected for a lens I grabbed for under $200.

You should probably go for the 80-200 over the 70-200 f/2.8 VR. I use the 70-200 and while I love it, I don't really have a need for VR or the extra 10mm on the wide end, so I could've saved a few bucks.

Food for thought.

That's probably what I'll end up doing, but the major upside of the 70-200VR is the AF-S. The 80-200's a big lens with a lot of glass, obviously, and might not focus fast enough for my purposes. I suspect it won't be an issue, though, since I'm using a pro body with a powerful focusing motor, which should take care of any issues.

I actually owned the 80-200 AF-D a few years back, when I was still shooting film, but sold it with intent to get the AF-S when I ditched my film gear, because the digital bodies of the time couldn't focus it fast enough. It was really nice on my F100 and the F5s I tried it on, and my D2 seems even faster with mechanical lenses than those cameras did, so I'll probably be ok with one, though.

D40. Enjoy high speed flash sync.
I can sync reliably up to 1/2000s even though there's never a need. Useful for dark scenes with slow and long zoom lenses.
>>
>>276798
I hadn't much time to actually shoot with the 80-200, but I do know the AF-S is FAST. My D80 would probably have trouble with the AF-D but on any of the higher end Nikons with beefy AF drives (like my F5) it'll probably be just as fast.

Not exactly sure but I thought all Nikons had a FP high speed sync if using Nikon's Creative Light System. In fact, I remember the D50 and D70/s having faster normal sync at 1/500 rather than the others' 1/200 because of their electronic shutters.

You are right, Though FP sync works, it really just sucks ass.
Its almost useless in the few situations you would want it.
It consumes way more flash power than simply upping the aperture, soo much so that the simple step from 1/250th to 1/300th (from FP to non FP) means you lose about 1/2 of your flash output, and it only decreases from there. By 1/1000th your flash is useless outdoors.

Modding a D40, D50 or D70s to fire the flash manually at any sync speed is suprisingly way more efficient than FP sync is.

If you care, theres some really anal hummingbird photographers who have done tons and tons of tests on the difference between the 2
