OP here, I know a lot of your dispositions towards HDR, but I must say, there is effective use for it. There are two types, realistic and surrealistic. My original pic some what borders the two, I think the surrealistic is the one you tend to hate more, and I can understand too. The fact that it is used a lot by inexperienced photographers is true, just be cause it looks "COOL". There are situations to use it and situations not to, but lots of people tend to use it all the time once they learn it. You may disagree, but I am just speaking my opinion. Of course HDR is unnecessary, but it is a technique, and one that many experienced photographers use in certain situations. I'm not saying that I'm one of them. I'm not trying to defend myself, I have confidence in my shooting, I do agree that my original pic is not the greatest, with haloing around the building etc.
tl;dr? HDR is mostly shit yes, but it can be used effectively. Have your own opinion, preferably from experience, don't just regurgitate what you hear.
Here are two pics I shot and used HDR in an effective way (I think). The room with the no exit door was pitch black, the only light was from the small opening of the door there would have been now way to capture this in the same manner, with one long exposure, the area around the door would have been very whited out. Sorry in advance if I burn your eyes with these...
