Canon EOS 400D Zar
Halp me /p/
I've got a budget of ~800 euro and I'm thinking of buying Canon EOS 400D, what optics should I buy to keep it all within my budget and be happy with it for a month or two before I get some more money?
The camera here is 500-600 euro, the kit with an 18-55mm EF lens with it would cost 560-660 euro, but I'm guessing that lens isn't really that good.

Canon might drop a new model in early 2008 if you can or feel like waiting.

The 400D is still a fine budget and beginner SLR. As for your question, you might want to keep the kit lens just because it's a convenient focal range even though it's mediocre in performance.

It's up to you. Several ways to go:

1) Buy body only and the new 18-55 IS which is a notch better.
2) Buy body only and a 50mm prime but this might be pretty limiting if you don't have the space to move around.
3) Buy the kit and get a Speedlite 430 or some off brand one and it will pretty much overcome any weakness of the kit lens.

Waiting is most definately not a problem, I've gotta make the money to get it first and that'll be in february next year :/

If canon does bring a new model, then I'll just be happier to buy the 400D, because the new one should bring prices down.

Evidence suggests that a new fairly-high-end camera (to replace the 5D) is coming in early 2008. I wouldn't expect a replacement for the XTi until late 2008 or 2009.

(Additionally, there've been rumors of that 7D arriving since 2004, so I wouldn't hold your breath for it)

I'd suggest picking up the 400D, 18-55 IS (not the 18-55 kit lens or the 18-55 USM), and the 50mm f/1.8. That's a pretty good all-around kit.

Going by the product shelf life from the previous models, it's about that time.

They just have to add LiveView and the larger screen at the same price or 100$ less than the current 400D and it will sell like hot cakes.

Add in 2 more MP for good measure and marketing.

Honestly, I can't believe how easyly people fall for the MP trick. From what I've seen a Nikon D40 can give ten times better pics than any 10mp pocket camera.

That's right. There've been rumors about a successor to the 5D dating back to before the 5D was released. DON'T QUESTION IT.

This picture makes me die a little bit on the inside.

Huh. I didn't realize the 40D was so much bigger than the XTi. I'm gonna need to get a bigger bag when I upgrade...

So why does that picture make you die a little inside?

I use the 400D with the 18-55mm kit lens, a Sigma 28-300 macro lens (~$230USD) and hopefully getting the 50mm F/1.8 soon.

Because it makes the 400D look like a toy.

yeah, when i sold my eos 350 to upgrade to a 40D (to be shipped today, there tomorrow) i just gave away the bag, too, knowing it would not fit the 40D with any lens mounted. I shall see whether it was worth upgrading (apart from extending my e-pen0r)

For 600$, you can't get better unless you buy used.
