Hi. I'm going on vacation, and will be flying.

what's the actual truth about taking film on the plane with you? I've had multiple people tell me they've taken film and had it develop fine, while I know a few that have had their film ruined, and an equal amount that haven't and still claim it will be ruined anyways.

what's /p/'s experience?

Low ISO stuff = unnafected by the X-ray's

High ISO stuff may fog

The baggage X-Rays will fuck your shit up no matter what. Never put film in checked luggage.

The security line X-Rays will fuck your shit up over ISO800 or so. Probably goes for film that's rated lower but pushes well to 800, too, like some of Kodak's ISO400 B&Ws.

Ask if you can get the film hand-inspected. Most places will do this.

Most places refuse, scan your gear (digital) then ask to hand inspect it whist showing no idea of what irony is.

Where do you live, Soviet Russia?

In the US, if you ask for a hand inspection, they give you a hand inspection. There are even helpful signs up in all the airports I've been to telling you that you're welcome to request a hand-inspection at any time for things you don't want going through the x-ray machine.

keep your camera bagged while in the airport unless you feel like getting hounded by security the entire time

like the others said, don't check any of your camera gear, take it with you

ask them to hand inspect it, but if it's a bunch of 100-400 iso just scan it or buy and send it off on location so you don't even have the film on you in the first place

Truth. Did you see in the news the talk of even more fingerprinting, facial recognition and monitoring of people simply in the airports?
