I am going to be going to Iceland in a couple weeks, and the auroras are supposed to be active. I have been looking into how to properly shoot them, and see all kinds of different ways. They usually are taking about a f2.8 lens though.

I just got a Canon EF 17-40mm f4L lens. Im sure that will work great, but its a little slow. I have a XTi that that fine lens is attached to.

Anyone know how/have suggestions to shoot the auroras with that lens? Thanks /p/

ps. not my pic, but very relevant.

also, I only have 3gb of memory cards. Should i look into getting more cards, or a portable digital photo storage device?

and, I only have the 1 original battery that came with the camera. Should i also look into getting another battery? Or maybe an external grip that can hold 2 batteries?

I'm pretty sure most aurora shots are with long shutter speeds (more than a few seconds) so your maximum aperture is not going to matter. The 17-40 should be fine.

Definitely get another battery. http://sterlingtek.com/ has batteries with twice the capacity for 1/4 the price of Canon's shitty batteries.
