Hi /p/, For starters I'm a britfag and I think my country fails; therefore I want to study at a university abroad seeing as it's almost time for me to get a job/go to Uni. I've been looking into schools but can't find any specific photography ones anywhere apart from some rubbish one in New York that you do over the web or some shit.

If you did, could you tell me where you went to Uni and if you can refer it to me?

Also, pic related, I like you alot /p/, I think you're the best board on 4chan, don't let me down.

I like you too, anon!

I'm going to the University of Texas at Austin for photojournalism. We have one of the best programs around, bar none. Certainly for the money, you can't get much better. Ohio University is maybe the only better alternative. Brooks is great, but fucking unrealistically expensive, and doesn't offer much of an education outside of photography. I feel like UT is the best of both worlds.

We already have many of your people captive, such as Ed Corrie, one of our star tennis players. He often whimpers and begs to be returned to his island nation homeland. You should join him.

Seriously though, UT is phenomenal, and the best part about coming here is Austin, not even the school. We've got the most live music in the United States, right here. We've got a thriving movie production scene. We've got explosively growing tech companies, such that they're calling the Austin area "Silicon Hills." We've got the best weather in Texas. We've got artists, hippies, musicians, photographers, the entire creative community, and of course, really awesome weed.

Pic related: it's me and my view.

Also, we have more beautiful women than you can shake a stick at. I'm not kidding. Every day when I walk to class, I see a dozen that make my jaw drop, and the rest ain't too shabby either.

Apparently UT has a kickass exchange program and works very well with foreign students. Most of the people that live in my building are either French or Australian, and I meet Britfags all the time. You certainly wouldn't be alone.

We also have sexxy men too, if that's your thing. Essentially, Austin is beautiful.

heavyweather, i couldn't have done it better myself. i am a psychology major at UT.

favorite things about UT/Austin?
1. the diversity of people i encounter
2. academic and extracurricular clubs/activities/programs/opportunities for pretty much anything anybody could be interested in.
3. stinky marijuana

Austin sounds fantastic Heavyweather; I always had Texas pinned as an arid wasteland of blistering heat and cowboys, just goes to show how much I fail when it comes to America.

I'm trying to find course info on the website but it fails, hoping to find some sort of contemporary photography (in b4 up ur own ass).

Also, that girl is hawt, I think you've got yourself a british immigrant.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
I went to school at the University of Missouri-Rolla. I have no idea if they have a photography program, since I didn't know dum-diddly-do about photography back then. My degree's in computer science.

Also, the male:female ratio is something like 8:1, and (with a few extremely significant exceptions) that 1 generally isn't too hot.

So yeah, wouldn't so much recommend it.

The man speaks truth.

Also, we've got like three killer thai places right around campus. Mmm.

I was a psychology major before I moved to photojournalism! Dude, hit me up on Facebook. Caleb Miller, Texas '10. Or search by interests, 4chan. Lawl.

I majored in commercial photography at Ohio University and I highly recommend it. VisCom is a fantastic program, and there is a photojournalism sequence there as well. Also, Athens is a hell of a good town to go to school in. If you're wanting photo-j, also consider the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO.

Avoid Brooks like the plague. Once a good program, it's now an overpriced course in bullshit where they give you outdated skills and promise you jobs you won't be able to get with their training.

The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, is excellent. The Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY is also a great program. If you're looking more for a fine-art program, Yale is very good.

While I can't say anything about UT in Austin other than that it does have an excellent reputation, I will say this: Austin is a wonderful city.

That's a good deal of west texas and far north texas, but not Austin. Austin's nestled in the center of the state, in between plenty of hills and several largeish bodies of water (Lake Travis, Town Lake, Barton Springs, etc). We're very temperate. Summers can get a little rough, but last summer was very rainy and nice, we only had like 5 days over 100 degrees. Fall is delicious, perfect weather. 68-72 degrees most days. Winters are cold, but not often freezing, perfect weather to wear your most fashionable jackets. Springs are sunny, beautiful, and we've got wildflowers aplenty, not to mention our botanical gardens... sorry about the fahrenheit, but I can't think in Celsius.

Austin's motto, by the way, is "Keep Austin Weird." It's very, very true. There's a reason Willie Nelson loves it here.

Cool! I mentioned Ohio University because they always seem to win half of the CPOY awards, it's insane.

>68-72 degrees most days
>5 days over 100 degrees

But I'm british, 12 degrees is warm, hottest day I've seen in my lifetime was 78 degrees I think, goodness.

Also, could you post me a link to a course directory or something, I fail at finding any information regarding the courses :(

>>138914
I heard NY was a really good place for photography and I think it's more the style I want to do if it's fine art/contemporary.

I think "Keep Austin Weird." is keeping Texas on top, though; Why does America have so many apparently good Universities?

It doesn't really. It just has a lot of people and back in the 19th century had something called the Land Grant program to start a shitload of state-owned universaties.

It has a lot of shitty ones, a decent number of ones that'll give you a decent education, some schools that are mediocre overall but are great for certain majors, and only a few that are actually all-around great. Probably the number you would get if you scaled up Oxbridge's two to something relative to the US population.

Are you sure you want to come here, though? America really isn't that good, and there's other countries in the Anglosphere.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA

Well, then just bring fewer layers. You'll be fine. People adjust quickly. You might even find you like it, most people do. ;)

Thats why I'm asking around, just that I know a very large percent of 4chan is American and /p/ is bound to be one of the boards which students use the most (apart from /b/, that is) so I thought this would be the best place to see what my choices are.

I've had a look at other countries such as Australia and New Zealand etc. but I can't find that much information in the way of photography oriented Universities; plus I'd prefer to study abroad seeing as I don't want to be stuck in the UK my whole life, but I see what you mean.

http://registrar.utexas.edu/schedules/

The UT website is labyrinthine and impossible to navigate, because every department has its own web design, and there's no unified design aesthetic or flow or anything... it's just a nightmare, so I apologize.

http://journalism.utexas.edu/

This is the program I'm in. We also have a fine art photography program, but that's in a different college. I'm of the opinion that a communications degree is a bit more practical and takes into account the modern corporate reality. But then again, the art photography market is starting to take off, so take your pick.

Oh, one more thing: Eli Reed, the Magnum photographer, teaches at UT. He's unbelievably cool.

Not a bad idea. My CS degree buys a lot more cameras than a fine art or photojournalism degree is likely to.

(Although, granted, with a photography-related degree, you could probably write said purchases off on your taxes. So there's that)

Just curious, but how are you going to be funding going to a uni abroad? At least in the UK, the local government pays part of your fees to make them $6000 or so. I've not looked into going to a US uni much, but I thought as someone not from the US you have to pay ridiculously extortionate fees?
>> Warren !WSxruxpIJs

A mix of shooting, assisting, writing, and product design. Primarily photography, though.

>>138992
Ah, thats what I have been thinking.

I highly doubt that the British government will fund me to go to another country to study there and I also doubt that the US will fund me because, well, I'm not an American citizen, I'm sure theres some way to do it seeing as there are thousands of people who do it every year.

Lol?! Of course your country will fund you when you study abroad. Anything else would be highly unnormal. At least for euro-standards. Norway will pay me both scholarship and all necessary loans no matter where I do my studies.

Shit i better stop my Aerospace degree and do some worthless art one instead!

With a specific art degree it will be good (depending on course) for that subject (ie photography) but it really wont hold itself against a "real" art degree (history, english, fine art/art history etc).

If you do a photography degree then loose interest in photography or cant work it, then you will have nothing.

Oh holy Christ, no. We have every beer imaginable. Sure, the 7-11s stock Keystones and Busch because that's what the dudebros at the frats and freshman parties drink, but take a walk through the Whole Foods Beer Cavern, as I call it. Beer to the ceiling, all really bizarre and funky. Plus, every good liquor store has a great selection. I believe fully 25% of the floorspace at the closest HEB (big grocery store chain here in the southwest) is devoted to beer and wine.

I'm fairly certain that if you can find Spaten Optimator, you can find anything. Blue Moon's my fave, though.

Re: Butterfly's comment on the worthlessness of a "art" degree (which this isn't, it's a comm degree, which is a bit more marketable)... every degree is fucking worthless if you're an inert lazy sunnovabitch. You won't get hired on the basis of your degree, you'll get hired on the basis of your personality, your talent, and your portfolio. Of those, PERSONALITY is likely the most important factor in getting chosen from the vast pack of job applicants with sterling resumés. A degree is more or less a seal of approval stamped on your forehead that says, "THIS DIPSHIT COASTED THROUGH 4 YEARS OF COLLEGE WITHOUT GETTING INTO TOO MUCH TROUBLE".

Do what you love, and do it well. Success will come if you grab it by the balls and bend it to your indomitable will.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>139102
Yes art degrees are worthless but for us scientists we cant even begin to think about working without a fully acredited degree.

What im trying to say is that a photography degree isnt going to give you the edge over an identical person with a history degree, it will make you suck.

Specialising in a small market with no crossover skills at university is a really fucking stupid idea.

Do fine art or art history, learn about colour theory (or color if you go to america -__-) composition and everything that makes art _art_ and when you get bored of photography or cant make it you will have something worthwile to fall back on.

>>139115
I agree with this. Learning a medium is relatively easy, especially one like photography where it's just a matter of learning a few basic technical rules and running with them until you get good at it. Learning art, OTOH, is the sort of thing that'll really add to it. Nachtwey, for instance, double-majored in Political Science and Art History, and taught himself photography while working in the Merchant Marine and a truck driver, and journalism while working as (if I remember correctly) a news editor for a local TV station. Undoubtedly, that twin choice of major and the picking up the practical skills elsewhere adds to his work. Or Salgado's training as an economist, which the emphasis on large-scale human trends is blatantly obvious in his work.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>139135
Well spoken, well reasoned, well researched, and all true.

However, I don't think I could finish my four years if I wasn't doing something I loved. Photography pulled me up from utter apathy. I suppose that if you can do an aerospace degree or electrical engineering degree, do that. I am not one of those people, though. :(

Def. Do a photographie degree in conjunction with some arts proper.
Philosophy, critical theories, art history/fine art, cinema studies and lit are fucking fascinating and will really help inspire some ideas.
Nothing worse than a fotograffa trying to be profound, but only being able to crawl up their own arse.

Melbourne Uni's about to merge it's arts department with Creative arts department and the VCA (Melbourne's school for the artistic 1337). Should enable you to do practical subjects as well as theory in the same degree.
