wrong for me; i've had the same set of lenses, for 9 years, with no interest in buying anything newer, and all of 3 cameras. 1 canon a-1, N60 (shot till broken) and an n80 now for 5 years. planning on buying another n80 when my one n80 conks out.

I'm kind of obsessed with gear right now, but only because I'm currently using a p&s. In general I find that once I make a decision and get my hands on something, I stick with it and don't upgrade unless absolutely necessary. Like, I've had my current computer since '02.

I wouldn't say I don't like taking creative pictures, but yeah guilty as well (probably half and half).

You could have formulated that better.

People like photography for various equally valid reasons. Why shouldn't I collect cameras instead of postmarks?

The trick is when you use your gear as an excuse for not actually going out and shooting. Or using your technical knowledge to sound like you know what you're doing.

Collecting cameras and liking photography are different things. The confusion is that a lot of people who are camera collectors refer to themselves as "photographers" despite the fact that all they ever take pictures of are test patterns, brick walls, and the occasional sunset.

Indeed. I like to collect old cameras, and I like to take pictures, but I don't go around calling myself a photographer. I just don't put enough work into it to be so.

I will admit to being as you said a 'gear whore' but all of my gear is at least 30 years old, and I use it all. I don't let it sit on some shelf to just look pretty. That would be a waste of money. I buy old cameras because I like the kind of pictures those old cameras make. So blow me, faggot.

wrong! 99.9999% of people who "like" photography are shitty deviant art faggots who think a long exposure of their fucking eyeball makes a good photo.

I'm a both, I like to have a good set of lenses that I use for any given situation (Macro, Sports, Indoor, Landscapes, IR, Low Light)
But I also take a shitload of pics, Probably around 30,000 a year, And my "test pics" aren't charts or anything, they are what I use the lens for, So although I love having good equipment I use it all (Sell what I don't)

i am so clueless. i have a canon s3 IS and a retardedly old mamiya/sekor with one lens and i haven't gotten any pics developed from it yet. it took me like 2 hours to load the film and get it to catch on the wheel. i am so far from being a gear whore that when i read the first post, i imagined like cogs and wheels with teeth and the castlevania 3 clocktower music.

recent studies suggest that the number is decreasing at 3% per year.
