If I see that fucking D40 one more time...

Lens selection is a bit limited (i.e., you can't autofocus on any of the good fast primes). Otherwise fine.

I hear that D40 and 18-200mm is a great combination.

I'm just talkin' 'bout the Nikon D40

yes, I'd rather get a D40 + lens than a D40x if I'm that budget oriented. If you have more to spare, skip the D40x and get a D80.

i gues it depends on what you mean by 'good'.

i was in the same situation as you three months ago. i was looking for my first dslr.

after going to a retailer and fiddling around with the various bodies. i liked the d80 more and the d40x felt too toyish imo. so i decided to go with a barely used d70s (2000 shutter actuations on the body)**. I got it with some extras for about the same price as a new d40x. i definately don't regret my choice.

** if 2000 actuations sounds like a lot it's not. I shoot at least 150 every time i go out and that's not even trying too hard. at most, the guy i bought it from (professional photog as backup) used it about 20 'days'/times. that's not even a month. i've already logged 1000 over a span of 4 outings.

2000 actuations is definitely not a lot. I got my Canon 40D on the 20th and just about hit 2100 actuations now.
