fill flash

Fill flash really is an important thing to learn. You can choose when to use it afterwards, but it will give you more options.

The exposure isn't really going to change anything. BlackAdder is right, a little fill flash is what will help.

Fill flash, got it. The pop-up flash on the XT isn't anything to write home about, but next time I'll give it a shot.

Here's another shot from yesterday.

The popup flash is actually not too bad for fill flash. You'll probably get some nice results with it if you play around with it.

yes it will: more dynamics. more shadow detail, less blown out. go ISO 100

indeed. for hard sunlight you dont have a lot of range though.. shoot as fast as you can sync, so you can use wider apertures and longer flash ranges.
watch out for light temperatures. for situations like these, daylight temperature will make flash OK and sunlight orange. compensating to make the daylight nice white, will make the flash light blue. for not too cloudy or too orange light, its all ok. if its worse, you'll need color gel filters..

I don't get what you're saying here. More shadow detail is going to mean it's more blown out. Less blown out is going to mean less shadow detail. How are you going to get both? And what the fuck does "more dynamics" mean?
