canon s3 IS. or canon s5 IS. i don't like the S5 for the price difference, OR the fact that they skipped S4. it doesn't offer a whole lot more than the S3, just higher ISO and more megapixels with the SAME EXACT sensor. so basically the S5 is a way to sell a camera, not improve a camera. from what i understand.

Having shot with both cameras extensively, I can say that the Panasonic FZ-8 is a much better camera for the exact same price. RAW mode, better glass, better overall feel, better viewfinder, etc.

The only losses are the swiveling viewfinder, the use of AA batteries, and I personally have a slight preference for how the S3IS handles manual adjustment of aperture and shutter speed to how the FZ-8 handles it.

But yes, the S5IS is fail. I believe it is larger and I know it is ass ugly, as well as the problems you mentioned.

The S4 was skipped for the same reason the G4 was: in Japanese, the word for "four" and the word for "death" sound very similar. There is a superstition against the number four for this reason, and out of marketing considerations, and probably in no small part superstition on the part of Canon decision makers as well, Canon never names any of its cameras by the number four.

He might not need a superzoom, however. So we need to find out what he needs.

If it has higher resolution, it can't be the same exact sensor...

well,
can't help you much there man. most cams under $400 tend to get progressively lower quality in terms of optics and functionality (I should know, I am using a kodak easyshare cx7310 and it has no focus and limited zoom capability).

anyway, try the sony cybershot models. they may be more expensive (around $650 locally) but they deliver lots of features and good optics/capabilities
