Dear /p/,

please justify the cost of this.
>> Anonymous
It's a Leica. You'll get tons of ladies.
>> Anonymous
Compare it to the cost of other professional level digital cameras.
Do you expect justification for the cost of all of those as well?
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
quiet, durable shutter (400,000+ exposures), Compact, rugged body, accurate rangefinder, superior optics, etc.

+1
A lot of people assume it to be inferior because the viewfinder doesn't view through the lens.

It's not inferior by any means, just different. There's a damned good reason for the price.

I hear simply owning a Leica makes your dick automatically like 4" bigger.

It's a Leica M that shoots digital instead of 135 film. What more do you need if you have the cash?
>> Anonymous
OP here, thanks. I'm actually thinking of getting one. I have an old 35mm Leica that I inherited from my grandfather, and it's built like a fucking brick and works perfectly even though it's ancient. I was just wondering if that same quality translated into their digital cameras as well.
>> Anonymous
>>201893
Pretty much. The shutter is supposedly slightly louder, and being electronic it can't get soaked like a film M, but otherwise it's the same thing.
>> Anonymous
They're fantastic pieces of craftsmanship. Excellent optics, compact inconspicuous body you cant get elsewhere. It's pure quality, if it's your style.

In b4 that pic of Scarlett with her Leica

My buddy who shoots tons of Leica film cameras said the digital ones have sensor issues and are plagued by stray infrared light messing up exposure. But maybe that's fixed.
>> Anonymous
>>201906
Not really no.
Now they ship them with a filter to cutoff the weird light that would give you purple shadows.
Really I'd say stick with your grandfathers M until they come out with an updated Digital M, hopefully with a full frame sensor.
Of curiosity, what kind of M is it?

Hell yeah, and if you own more than one, it's exponential. It squares in size for every one you have. And turns robotic pneumatic.

Let's see some images from this camera. Flickr of course, yielded nothing useful. And they listed it as a point and shoot (which it is I guess).

Quality work comes with a premium price tag. If you don't want to pay for a Leica, get a Minolta Hi Matic for like, $5 on ebay.

Go to David Alan Harvey's blog; he posts stuff from it there all the time.

Full frame sensor probably isn't possible with the M-mount; it isn't with current tech.

Seriously, fuck the M8, get a little coldshoe meter for that thing and use it to death.

>>202071
What's wrong with the M8? You want a film M? You've got the M3, M2, M4, kinda the M5, M6, M7, and MP, and all their variations, to choose from. You want a digital M? You've got the M8, and hey, it works fine.

Two different things. Pick one or both.

OP here, yeah it really is. I mean just the way it feels to hold and use it. Every piece, especially the moving ones, just feel so perfectly engineered and solid. It's a wonderful camera and carries a great deal of sentimental value to me so I baby it.. but it really feels like I could put it through hell and it would still come through just fine

Austerity in ergonomics, nothing flashy. Pure mechanical quality and trust-inducing durability/construction.

>>202149
so it's like a "fuck you and your fancy packaging" camera,,, function before form?
>> Anonymous
>>202150
Kinda, pretty much. It's pretty in its own way too.
>> Anonymous
>>202150
I would argue that it's the purest distillation of form follows function. I have an M3 in addition to a number of other cameras including high end DSLRs, and I feel that the Leica is the very best I've ever used. It fits your hand perfectly, it's well balanced, everything is in reach and logically placed, and the finish and build quality is impeccable. A Leica provides everything a competent photographer needs and nothing he doesn't, which is quite refreshing in an industry where manufacturers are obsessed with outdoing each other with tons upon tons of marginally useful, questionably useful, and outright worthless features. An M is a camera that will never get in the way of picture taking.

Not OP
I want to get one and from what I heard, it would last me forever...but it's too expensive...oh well.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
I guess this is where I wave my dick/camera about because I've gotten the closest to owning an M8 so far (RD-1 <3)

It's simple to justify the cost of the RD-1 - it's the cheaper of the two digital rangefinders. And I wanted a digital rangefinder.

Justifying a digital rangefinder is a little harder. I suppose I'd be just as happy if Nikon jammed a digital sensor into the FM2. I like rings and knobs, and I also like how I can travel with the camera and a lens on my shoulder and another lens in my pocket and be set for a week. And the viewfinder is great.

Also I'm a disgusting gearfag, which I can't really be ashamed to admit. Shooting a 1 second exposure on my Leica IIIc, or my Oly OM-1, or my shitbag Chinese folder makes me go "wow, some fucking genius human beings used tweezers and magnifiying glasses and made this lump of metal into something that can precisely time out one second and still work several decades after its manufacture". I guess it's an appreciation of human engineering ability, just like some watch collectors would claim to have.

So being able to stick a lens from the 50's on my shiny new digital camera and still use it fills me with wonder every time I trip the shutter. And collecting things is nice.
