Flash OiD
Hi /p/. I'm looking at buying a flash for my Sony alpha 350. It uses the minolta type hot shoe (me thinks), what options do I have other than Sony's expensive flash?

Metz, sunpacks, hotshoe adapters, ADI, TTL??? Complete flash noob :p

It does use the Alpha iISO shoe (Aka the minolta shoe.)

Really, get the Sony 56AM or you'll be kicking yourself in a few months. The sony 42 and 36 are also good options (and IIRC you can get the 36 for ~$120USD?)

You won't need a hotshoe adapter if you get a flash that has the iISO shoe (minolta shoe.)

ADI is advanced distance integration that takes advantages of the 8 pin lenses that you probably have with your 350.

TTL is just through the lens and is basically the "auto flash" mode.

Thanks for the info, how about an of camera flash? Decent, cheap(ish), powerfull... I guess only the Sony flash would use its advanced controls wirelessly :s

Is there somewhere I can brush up on flash knowledge xD

Dyxum is pretty much the ultimate for Sony/Minolta information.

The forums are kinda weird sometimes with a bunch of non native English speakers, so prepare for some garbled english there. The reviews are pretty good though.

max shutter speed != x sync

That flash has a special high-speed sync mode that basically flickers it in time with the motion of the shutter so it can act like it's syncing up to 1/4000th

every decent flash has that mode but you lose 1/3 of your power that way

and it's not x sync in the first place anyway

Unless of course you are shooting with a D70 or D50 with the rear 2 pins taped down. Then the electronic shutter guaruntees an even exposure in the frame.
It also loses power much slower than FP sync or high speed sync.
