The main difference is that you can switch lenses on a SLR, making them more versatile. (If you want to take advantage of that it'll mean spending a lot more money after buying the cam.) Also the sensor is bigger, this means less noise (especially in low-light) and it's easier to get shallow DoF (look it up, google is good for you). Also, you'll be looking through the lens via a viewfinder, instead of at the display. And don't expect to shoot movie clips with an SLR.
Don't let your memory stick totally dominate your decision making process btw, if you find a nicer camera but it takes compact flash you can probably afford to splurge another $25 on a 1GB card.
