For someone looking for a step-up from point-and-shoot cameras, is the Nikon D200 alright? Or can I get a D80 and not miss out on so much?
>> Anonymous
>> set-up from point-and-shoot
nikon d50/d40/d40x
canon xt/xti
olympus e500/e330/e410/e510
pentax k100d

... choose one. they are all better than a p&s without breaking your bank. if you've never picked up a film slr they will be more than fine for you.

if you have enough money to buy a d200 i suggest buying one of the bodies above and invest in a lens appropriate for your shooting style. As the saying goes, you come for the body and stay for the lens ... so i suggest canon, nikon, pentax, or sony minolta.
>> Anonymous
Usability wise get a Sony A100, cheap, easy to use. You can also find lots of old lenses for really cheap (Minolta ones)
>> Anonymous
cheap body + rest of precious monies on used glass & old flashes to use off-camera.

you'll thank me later :)

Whatever you do, don't get the D40 or the D40x
Get a D80 and a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 if you can afford it.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
The D80 still has that nice inbuilt wireless commander mode for controlling flashes that other brands should be thinking of copying.

Well the d200 is a step up from the d80, so the d300 can do more but is a tiny bit more technical. I am happy with the d80 myself .

are you speaking from experience? whats wrong with the d40? its a lot cheaper right?

I endorse this option.

Don't buy the d40. You will be disappointed.

Spend as much as you can on a camera body now, and pick up lenses along the way. That way, you get the most out of every lens you have.

You'll also find you need every feature on the more expensive cams after a relatively short while... Don't be a sucker and buy every step up. Jump to the top now.

Don't get that Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 crap. Get the nikkor 50mm f/1.8 You will love it. And Get the D80. IF you have money get the D200 or the D3, but there's nothing wrong with the D80
>> Anonymous
D40x is going to be replaced by the D60(source by engadget.com) and its a pos anyways... D80 ftw.. I suggest if you are getting the body + lens kit get the 18-70 instead of the 18-135, if not get the body with the 50mm 1.8 from nikkor

Moron.

The 17-50 is a great lens, and it's not far behind Nikkor's own 17-55.

D80 was a great introductory camera for me, and I know all its features and use them on a regular basis, and I can adjust settings according to the situation on hand based on what it can and cannot do.
>> Anonymous
Try finding used D70(s).

If youre lucky youll find one thats sold with the 18-70mm kit lens.
>> Anonymous
Get the Nikon D80 with the Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens. It is a fantastic allround lens and a good and not very expensive camera. The D200 is not much better if you're not pro and know the extra functions. And D300 has some serious problems.

Nikkor please, if the price is a complaint then get something else.

And you wouldn't even look at it anyway Canonfag. :D

But i guess you're not used to decent ergonomics or proper weather sealing on a non 6000 dollar camera.

I've always thought it was crazy when people buy high end bodies and then use cheap glass with it.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>107670

yeah i'm in agreement there. And i don't say say cheap glass, just lenses without great optical performance.
>> Anonymous
>>107671

This is true. As the bodies and sensors get better you need better and better glass to go with it. Otherwise I don't see the point in having it.

It's another reason the megapixel race was never going to be able to keep going in any meaninful way like it was. There's already excellent and very expensive lenses that are not able to or are struggling to resolve enough detail for the latest generation of cameras.

On the upside this might spur on research into lenses rather than adding more gadgets to bodies.

There's a big sign on a building near here that says "ISO 9001"

I don't know what it means, but it amused me.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>107800

iso 9001 is a set of management standards. documented processes and whatever. you'll often see businesses bragging about being iso 9000 compliant, but it basically just means they're not a total sack of shit.
>> Anonymous
>>107801
"International Standards Organization"?
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>107803

yeah. it's why we newfags refer to film speed as ISO and not ASA. ISO 5800 is the international standard for film speed.

ISO 12232:2006 is the "Digital still cameras -- Determination of exposure index, ISO speed ratings, standard output sensitivity, and recommended exposure index"

ISO 1230:2007 determines flash guide numbers.

ISO 517:1996 deals with aperture.

ISO 15739:2003 outlines how to measure noise and dynamic range in a digital photo.

ISO 1007 describes the exact dimensions of 35mm film.

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

>yeah. it's why we newfags refer to film speed as ISO and not ASA
In a similar vein, ASA stands for American Standards Association. The ASA film speed numbers became the ISO film speed numbers when they took the standard international.

(Technically the ISO comprises both the ASA-style number and the DIN-style number, but nobody uses the DIN part--at least not here; they might in Germany where it came from--and it may have been officially dropped from the standard when we switched to digital)
