My photography teacher insists that I buy a 35 mm film camera even though the school has some extra ones and I would be the only one borrowing one.

I'm a graphic design major and will never use it again since I have several digital cameras.

Is it worth getting?
>> Anonymous
I don't think so. You should slap your teacher and then borrow one.
>> Anonymous
a camera is a camera, since im assuming you're better with digital, just borrow one from your school

This man speeks the truth

Ebay a pentax k1000, good solid SLR (i use my dads old one, i learnt to shoot on it when i was a kid, and still take it on holiday.. never let me down)

£30-40 will sort you out

How much of a 35mm do you really need? I mean, will an older model be OK? You should be able to pick something like an Nikon FM/FE, or a Canon/Minolta/Olympus/etc equivalent up pretty cheaply. I think I picked up my old FM for like 50 bucks, although ebay makes it look like prices have gone up on those, since they're hitting "classic" status.

See if anybody you know has something you can borrow, or that they don't want, as well. A friend of mine gave me a Yashica rangefinder and three Pentax bodies, with a bunch of various lenses and accessories (strobes, cases, filters, a motor drive) when he moved out of the country and couldn't take them. A lot of people have older SLRs sitting around unused, though.

K1000 is overpopularized and thus expensive. If they refuse to let you borrow one of the film SLRs from the school just buy the cheapest thing you can find at a thrift store. If the prof complains just state your reasoning clearly and say you are unwilling to shell out $100 for equipment you will most likely never use again.

Or just pick up a really bad cheap film P&S and say it's a cheaper alternative to a Holga.

an AE1 is what $20? come on!

Well there we go. AE-1 and the most god-awful 50 we can find to put on the thing.

I should start a project to build the WORST SLR.

Using a broken lens is cheating unless it's broken by design. I'm talking about finding a lens made by a monkey with no hands or some shit.
