aww damn, is that the only way?

Be on good terms personally with the artist. Other than that,>>105233is the only way to go.

So I take it this probably applies to sporting events as well (like college level, not just pro)

It's relatively easy to get press passes. Most companies use freelance work nowadays, so just apply somewhere that'll be at an event you want to get to.

would one apply to the venue, the artist/subject, or third parties (ie newspapers etc)

I recommend talking to the artist directly, I've been asked to take photos for various local artists who play at larger shows which allows you to take pictures of the more famous bands that play as well (IE. Small band headlining for HUGE MEGA BAND).

Although I've even went out of my way to e-mail band members directly of much larger bands (such as members of strapping young lad) to ask them permission to do things (such as host mp3 files), they are usually very friendly if you say you are using it for a website/etc and just want to help promote them and will normally try to keep in touch with you about various events.

For giant mega bands that play with mega band headliners, well, either know someone in the venue or get a press pass. But even then, a press pass will not guarantee you, it helps to ask a month or so in advance via the record label if you intend to just do shots for "press" reasons (or zine/etc).
