Hello /p/
I've got a Nikon D80, 18-135mm kit lens, I know someone who is selling a 'Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor' for $80, would this be a decent purchase? If not advise something else please.
Thanks.

It's appropriate on a crop camera. An 80-90mm yields around 130mm, which might be a bit tight, depending on your needs.

aperture rings?

what is this? the 60s?

50mm f/1.8 = 75mm~equiv on your D80.

This is usually considered a focal length appropiate for portraits.

I'd also advice you look into 30mm primes, these are usually abit more costly - but on a crop sensor will be around 50mm~.

a 35mm would be better for portraits on a crop body.

agreed, I sold my 18-135 mm kit for my D80 and got the 50 1.8. If you don't mind zooming with your feet, the 50mm is a sharp, cheap lens. But if need a wider angle, get a 28mm f2.8. Right now I'm saving for the 17-55 f2.8.

Aperture rings never should have left. They look nice, and add another way to control the camera, which is never a bad thing.

More importantly, they let the lens have better depth of field scales. If one needs or prefers manual focus, that's excellent.

I have never been able to get used to the fucking dials on cameras, and one of my biggest frustrations is that Nikon is now forcing me to get rid of aperture rings if I want to own any new lenses. It's a big reason why I'll happily jump to Pentax if they ever release a body that I like.

Aperture rings are awesome, dude, fuck dials.

How the fuck can you disagree with that when it's quantifiably verifiable fact? The quality of the glass not to mention the construction of the lenses of now absolutely eats anything that came out of the 80s by a long way, and you'd be a fool for not accepting it. That's like saying Kevin Bacon wasn't in Footloose.

Psssh, fucking Johnny-come-latelys 'round these parts.

This guy's actually right though, the lack of an aperture ring makes it easy to create lenses with much smaller barrels and simpler construction (i.e., more durable)
