Also, since you'll need to buy glass for either one, the Canon 18-55 IS costs about $20 less than the Nikon 18-55 VR, and the Canon 50mm f/1.8 costs about $20 less than the Nikon 50mm f/1.8. So take that $40 saved into account when calculating the cost.
