I use an extra manually operated flash to avoid that. Though it works only when using a tripod, as a third hand is needed otherwise.

nah, she wasn't blinking to the pre-flash, since i was shooting manually. she would do it without the flash, too. it was almost this pavlovian thing where she had to blink on command.

plus, this sort of thing gets worse in group portraits, too. just statistically speaking, it only gets harder to have everyone with their eyes open with the more people you have in the photo. goddddddamn i hate doing group portraits.

Should have just kept talking to them casually while taking shots and making no indication of when you are going to take them while you have them set up.

If a group is large enough to be a problem where someone is always blinking then Photoshop sorts out that problem.
