cheapest possible decent digicam? Anonymous
I've been learning photography with a 1mp digicam and now feel ready to spend some money on a better camera. I'm a poor student though so the camera should be as cheap as possible but still be able to take decent pictures.
I will use it for taking pictures of objects and people and possibly some macro pictures.

Would a compact pentax/sony/canon 5mp be a good choice? I've seen such for sale, good prices. Or would it make more sense saving more money for a low-grade dslr?

A good number of people will probably disagree with me, but the Canon S3IS is probably the best closeness-to-SLR relative to price deal currently made.

how does echidna know what cameras is?

also i have to agree with>>37552.
after extensive research to determine the best camera i can get for low price concerns, i have settled on the S3 IS. a lot of reviewers say that it's not worth it for the advantages it has over the S2 IS, but you can find it somewhere on the interbutt for the low 300's range if you look hard enough.

Fujifilm S6000fd/S6500fd (same thing). Nice 28-300mm zoom range and very useable high ISO.

what this fuji is missing that the S3 IS has is a little extra zoom and image stabilizing. i plan on doing a lot of mobile and spontaneous long-range zoom shots without a tripod or anything to stabilize so i really like that feature on the canon.

what is the advantage of a DSLR anyway? what if i don't CARE about the lag on an LCD? are the sensors generally larger and better or what?

>>37903
- Generally larger, higher-quality sensors.
- Support for a variety interchangeable lenses which in the long run will end up costing more and lasting longer than the camera body.
- Much quicker manual focusing.
- Look through the viewfinder and what you see is much closer to what you get.

Furthermore, and this may not be specific to DSLRs, but really, really short bootup time. For when you have to get that picture NOW. (0.3secs or so on my 350D)

you shut off your camera? weird. Mine is always on

why do you want a digital camera? A mamiya RB 67 can take photos equivalent to about 60mp (with 400 speed film) and you can get a used one with a 90mm lens and 120 back for like 300. Digital is just gimping yourself

Enjoy your development time and gimped postprocessing and buying film?

I didn't realize you worked for a firm and needed your photographs 20 seconds after you shot them, oh wait, you don't. Development time is short- an hour to a day depending on location, you can even do it yourself (granted, BW is vastly easier than color), as for your post processing comment, perhaps you should learn how to expose your negatives correctly, that way you wont need to tweak your raws/negatives- and 2 cheap filters can basically fix all issues with white balance (a blue and magenta filter fix all that, some other minor ones help as well)- and the most stupid comment- film price- well, think about this, a medium 67 format camera is about 300 used, an equivalent digital camera (only one, by hasselblad, and its actually about 64.5, not 67) costs 40k. Do the math, dipshit, i think you can totally foot the film

Stop being an elitist fag (if you're not trolling). Film has its own advantages and so does digital. OP clearly stated he wants DIGITAL, so let him be. If you want to stick with film, then we won't stop you- just don't fucking push your preferences in front of other people's faces.

Chemical photography possesses far more detail than digital photos. Digital photos = useless.

Personally, for computer photography just take pictures with polariod cameras (which are sweet btw) then scan 'em.

Analog > Digital. Get with the game.

Sage for film vs. digital trolls

Film is old, but good. Film wont go away. Film is better/nicer/bigger than world.

Digital is new age, finding a lot of places that need it. Convenience!!! dSLR is a WHOLE TON better than P&S.

Now, GET THE FLAME OUT OF /p/ .

End of story. Next thread please.

Well you could've mentioned that in your original post. Look at the Panasonic FZ50. It has IS, manual focus rings and further in cropping zoom if you really need zoom. Or the Olympus SP-550 UZ has an 18x zoom that starts off wide like the Fuji I mentioned.

The FZ50's a bit noisy and pricier than the S3. The 550 sounds good, but I've had no real experience handling it so I can't help OP with that.

Personal recommendation would include the G7. But if OP is looking at cheap 5MP cameras, I'd say they're good too (the ones from Canon anyway. Sonys are overpriced pieces of shit)

You can probably get a Pentax SLR for that....

The S3 has alot more purple fringing and barrel distortion than the FZ50. The FZ50 has better controls and handles alot better.

However I think OP should just get a cheap Pentax K110D or go with a second hand dslr.

how else is he supposed to try to get rings? it's not like there are any other boxes around.
