Hey /p/ I'm no photography expert, but I picked up one of these shitty Diana+ cameras the other day for $50. It seems to have some cool effects on photos taken and I decided to try it out.
So I was wondering, should I return this piece of shit, or will my photos have cool dreamy effects, as it claims?
Also since I found this at Urban Outfitters, is this just some shitty vintage trend that I accidentally bought into?
And finally, tips?

Isn't that a bit of a stretch?

Maybe a little, but I saw a Nikkomat camera with a 135mm F1.8 going for about 100 bucks. Pretty sure you could get something a little less impressive for less cash.

You can get an old MF or 120 camera for $1-10. One of the old Box Brownie wannabes and so on. Real old classics that you would probably have more fun to use. They were old and cheaply made, but two or three dollars is a better price to pay and the construction of them is still way better than that $50 piece of crap.

Far too high a price to pay for it.

I wanna make a correction; I used the acronym MF wrong. I didn't mean Medium Format, I meant Manual Focus. Sorry about the confusion.

The camera was designed to be very, very cheap.

The camera was designed to be very, very cheap by NINETEEN-SIXTIES COMMUNIST CHINA STANDARDS. They were made to be cheap enough to give away at fairs and parties.

These things probably cost around a dollar to produce, if that. You can find 'em all over the place for a pittance. He got ripped.

OP here.

Ok I'm returning this motherfucker, but I'm keeping the book it came with.
Also I live in NYC, anyone wanna recommend where to go to pick up a cheaper one of these?

Go to a flea market and don't pay more than $10. You can get an old 120 camera like the antique ones I mentioned for $1-10 or get one like ac did for about the same.

eBay would be an alternative, but the market would likely be cheaper and let you browse and handle them.

I know that, I misread his post and I thought he meant you could get a decent medium format camera for that price, when in fact he just meant manual focus.

And yes.
There is no point to paying over $20 for a Diana or a Holga.
$20 is even a little much.

Ahhh, I see what you mean. Sorry about that.

I'd say return it and make a pinhole.

It could be a weekend crafts project!

$50 is waaaaaay too much for one of those cameras.
If you want a Holga, get a fucking Holga.
Search around and you can get one for $20.

Hell, I'll sell you mine for $20.
