Su/p/

I started developing my own b&w and it's been GREAT SUCCESS.

I'm shooting Neopan 400(120) souping in Clayton F-76+ and it turns out this film is INFINITELY PUSHABLE.

You heard me. I can shoot at 6400 and 3200 with almost no obnoxious grain, and I'm looking forward to seeing what 12800. Though the development times are obnoxious, I am happy.

The following are 3200.

I think I need to mention that this is scanned on a quality Epson 4490.

Mamiya M645 1000s bro.

That's all the shots I have for now, until I develop my 1600 rolls.

why blown highlights looks cool on film but sucks on digital?

uh oh, brace for dynamic range shitstorm

Dude, you thought 400 was good? Prepare for the furious masturbation to start when you see your 1600. Unbelievably gorgeous film.

>>236589
I mispoke. I mean Neopan 400 pushed to 1600.
So I'm assuming you mean that Neopan 1600(not available in 120 btw) is superior?

I only shoot MF so I could avoid the grain problems due to format contraindictions.

>>236590
Oh my god, yes. It's a shame it isn't available for your application. It's a godly film, I use it all the time really. Great for low light photography, and has literally the same grain as 400. It's insane, unless you're enlarging to some huge scale, you really cant tell. Luckily I have a good provider in town, the problem with it is it's pretty hard to find fresh. Try it out for 35mm. It's great.

OP what are your development times? I just so happen to have a couple bricks of Neopan 400 at my disposal.

>>236623
Sure.
Use http://digitaltruth.com/devchart.html to start with.

But with F76+;
400 ISO
1+9;5:30 at 24C
800 ISO
1+9;7:45 at 24C
1600
1+19;15:30 minutes at 24C
3200
1+19;22:00 minutes at 24C
6400(AWESOME)
1+39;44:00 minutes at 24C

Use the fucking wetting agents, and prepare to be bored of agitating, so you can do an assignment or something while this is going on.

Where do you get the F76+? I've never used it.

http://www.freestylephoto.biz/sc_search.php

search for clayton f76+
also, pick up their orderless fixer, so that you don't really need a stop bath.

Cool....thanks.

As for the fixer, I've been using Formulary TF-4 for years now. I haven't used stop bath for at least five years. Water bath is enough.

dear op, when scanning your negs what type of sharpening do you do if any ?
>> Anonymous
>>237445

If you can stomach it, do input sharpening at the end of the scanning process, and output sharpening when converting to jpg.

I don't have PS, so I don't have much experience with USM.
>> Anonymous
also, do you think similar results (high push) can be achieved with D76 ?
>> Anonymous
>>237534
I'm not the OP so I can't speak from experience, but I believe on Freestyle's site it essentially says that this developer is a clone of D76.
>> OP
>>237667

If it was a pure clone of d76, there'd be no reason to buy it.

It is not extremely temperature sensitive, is a liquid concentrate, pushes EXTREMELY well.
For more info, I'd check photo.net.

FWIW, from freestyle:

"A phenidone based developer for all black and white films. Finer grain, better shadow detail, and hypoallergenic.

"Designed to match Kodak D-76 in quality of tonal range, grain structure and contrast."
>> OP
>>237534
I don't have experience with D76, but from the strong dilution ratios, and development times, I anticipate it being more time intensive.

Remember that:
1. Each stop of pushing = (dev. time) * sqrt(2)

2. Halving the amount of dilute(1+1 to 1+3) will decrease contrast and also multiply dev time by 1.414. You need to drop the contrast as you push more to retain more and more shadow detail.

I don't know if this is general knowledge, but this is what I picked up by snooping around.

Since this is the only B&W thread on /p/ worth asking this on;

When I shoot Caucasians under tungsten light, they come out more like tan.
pic related

When you guys shoot the same indoors do you use color filters? I have no problem just slapping in on there and shooting pushing 3 stops at the end (because I can)

Here's a red filter + 2 flashes. Much smoother and more true to life.

Looking on photo.net and google, people bitch about yellow-orange being the best, and green being useless, panchromatic film, etc.

Anybody here actually uses red filters for portraiture?
