Fringing/Chromatic Aberration Anonymous
Goofed around with my camera while at work last night. While messed around with Liveview and just looking at the nameplate on my computer, I noticed some green or purple coloring at the edges if the image was out of focus.

This image is the the focus a little off one way, about proper, then a little off the other way.

Is this chromatic aberration? Is whatever particular phenomena I'm seeing here expected and to this degree?

Taken with a 40D and a 24-70mm f/2.8L. I've taken a fair number of shots with this lens and never really noticed this before. The 40D I've only had a few days.

it seems that it indeed is a chromatic aberration

Longitudinal chromatic aberration, to be precise
>> Anonymous
That happens with pretty much any lens in high contrast situations.

Purple halos around high-contrast edges = purple fringing (appears only on digital cameras, depends on the lens/sensor combination)

Slight green/purple tint of the out-of-focus blur (green in the front out-of focus area and purple in the back, or vice versa) = longtitudinal CA

Purple/green or yellow/blue borders around high-contrast objects in image corners = lateral CA

Thank you. So pretty much this is something to expect? If so, I'm not too worried.

In one photos of a friend skateboarding, the is some red fringing on the bottom/right edges of a person that was up against a cloudy sky. Is this a related issue?

Well, in your case those look like longtitudinal CAs, and they are present in pretty much every large-aperture lens. There's little to worry about: you'll be hard pressed to find a situation when they will be visibly annoying.

About the photo of a friend skateboarding, post the crop of the offending area so we can tell.

Take a look at the bottom of the arm.

If it's near the edge of the image, you can try to fix it using lateral CA correction in your RAW converter or Lens Correction filter in photoshop. Otherwise, it's related to purple fringing and, sadly, isn't auto-correctable.
