I'm new digital photography, but recently got a new camera, point-and-shoot Olympus FE-230. I really love nature photography, and this thing does fabulously in good lighting, so I went to a local park and took a lot of pictures.

Here's a few of my favorites, I'd like your opinions. I'd like to get more into digital photography one day, and buy a better camera once I have the money (my budget was $200).

Wow, that camera has some pretty strong chromatic aberrations. Those are the little red and cyan fringes on the sides of the leaves. They show up most when there's a dark object with bright light spilling over its sides. It happens because the glass somewhat separates the spectrum into the different elements of white light, and doesn't correct them completely, resulting in them hitting the film plane (or sensor in this case) at different points.

As for the composition of the shot, I suggest playing with some of the metering modes on your camera. If there's an option like center-weighted or spot-metering, that will make it compensate so the leaves are brighter.

Leaf macros are fun, though. Don't be afraid to play around with whatever manual settings your camera has. This shot is a good start.

Hmm...I don't think my camera has metering. It does have a manual exposure adjustment though. Could I use that to achieve a similar effect?

Today was my first real time out with the camera, and I really like the macro made, and the ultra-macro mode, as you can probably tell from my shots.

It has metering.

Every camera that has autoexposure of any sort -has- to have metering.

The question is whether you can control how it meters.

Since it is a point-and-shoot, though, it should display what the photograph will look like at its present exposure settings, so you can visually "meter" by what the screen looks like in that manual mode.

This is beautiful and perhaps my favorite. I just LOVE the lighting and the composition

That's significantly better than your others. The lighting and contrast is dead on, I love it. Even the blown-out bits of sky are interesting, they look like bubbles.

Thanks, I have a few more like that. It was a cloudy day, and they parted for a moment, and I managed to get a few shots.

MUCH better composed than the previous one. Even better

What exactly makes it better composed? I personally like the first one better, but that's just personal preference I guess.

I also have others that are in similar lighting, but without the dark background.

I think I like the fact that the leaves are more.. noticeable.. here. I was debating over whether to suggest on the other photo that you cut off a bit of the top and bring the other leaves up, but decided against it because I liked the photo as is. But that other photo builds on levels a bit more for me and the perpesctive's fun. Just a personal opinion, though.
