There's rumblings about a Canon 7D, but that would definitely fall in between the 40D feature set and the 1DMkII feature set. Best guess it'd be a full frame, higher fps update to the 5D, but far more expensive than the D300.
The Nikon line has been famous for slotting in between what the lines Canon are offering, and the D300 slots nicely between the 40D and 1DMkII (right now). So for this amount of features and at this price, this is the best out there at the moment. And remember, D200's were more expensive than the 30D's, and less expensive than the 5D's, and sold a metric fuckton.
As it currently stands, the D300 will continue that tradition, while bringing pro level feature set (51 AF points, high fps, tough body), much ballyhooed consumer level feature set (live view from the 40D, which can't even do it right, and sensor cleaning and such) to the proponents of the DX line of lenses.
The ridiculously highly detailed lcd and hdmi output couldn't hurt either. The one thing I'm jealous of the 40D is the wireless transmitter grip. Man that's sexy.
