Sup /p/,

I was wondering over how people here prefer to set up and shoot objects, i.e. like the picture posted. I've been thinking of building my own softbox for some while now and was wondering if some other people have any tips about what and how the softbox should be built.

Attached pic was actually just a test shot -- dug up a poster, taped it against the wall and diffused a few lamps, hence the bad WB. Gotta get some cold filters or colder lamps.

just adjust your white balance. get a white sheet of paper and use the "set white balance" function on your camera.

my brother's camera got a hotshoe, I used it once before to shoot some things. used a dedicated flash with two strobes, using diffusers/light bouncing. it took a lot of messing but final results were pretty good~

White balance can be a pain without good lighting. While they may be darker, I prefer my overhead flourecent lights to my desk lamps when taking photos of my anime figures. I compensate for the much lower light by doing extremely long shutter speeds (5-30 seconds).

You can see a few examples over in my gallery: http://unforgivenmind.deviantart.com/gallery/

Thanks for the tips. Tried out some more today, and got my better lamp working (100W). Next thing would be a nice matte background.

Oddly enough, I actually stand my IBM laptop up on its side, and use that as my backdrop in a lot of my images.

ooh, decent. looks better then most figurine photos already. I recommend longer focal lenghts for this kind of photography, you can simply blur the background. plus it gives a nice flat field of view. 50mm on a smaller sensor is quite nice already, but something longer wouldn't be bad

try a light from each side, that should accentuate the curves a bit ;)

you could always make a cheapy photo box http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/07/how-to-diy-10-macro-photo-studio.html

DIY time! Things are starting to look up already - using three ordinary lamps desktop lamps with some thin paper working as diffuser. Also got really cheap (sub-dollar/euro) cardboard for use as background, which has been working pretty nicely already. Thanks for the tips and URLs too, will probably try to build up the softbox this weekend!

Now that I look back on the first ones, there's quite a difference already. Still some things need ironing out, though..
