just put in my order for a new canon 40d with a 35mm 2.0 and an 85mm 1.8

this will be my first camera. i did quite a bit of research. do you guys think that's a legit starter set up? the lenses i mean

sure, sounds great.

A 35mm prime might be a touch limiting as your walkaround lens, but is decently wide enough to be usable.

cancel the 85mm and get the 24mm, 35mm and 50mm

extreme awesome

Or a 20 and 28 instead of the 24 and 35, which is what I'd personally get. All depends on your taste in focal lengths and what you shoot. What are you planning on shooting, OP?

For a starter planning on shooting general subjects, just a good 28 and 50 would be good to learn on, and add something wider later.

i got the 35mm f/2 as a "general use" lens that is on the faster side and i can get pretty close with it

i got the 85 because it has such rave reviews and i wanted something thats a bit tele for when i _dont_ want to get close and also for rocking out on some portraits.

im pretty sure these two lenses fit my desires i just wanted to know what everyone here thought about the decision. ive already placed the order anyways so yeah. expect a couple pics from me in 3 to 5 business days

the 85 1.8 is one of the best lenses i've used. everyone likes it.

I don't know what kind of photography you do.
From your lens selection, I'm guessing you're a bokeh whore.

I do street work, so I would have gotten either a Tamron 17-50/2.8 (budget) or a Canon 17-40/4 for awesome. I shoot at f/5.6 or 8, and if you need wide open, you're just messing around, so add a sigma 24/1.8. It actually works.

How can he be a bokeh whore if this is his first camera?

The 85 1.8 lens is known for being both really sharp, and a bokeh whore favorite, so on that side you might be right.

All in all, though, his decision to pick those two just means that he wants speed, which is perfectly fine. If he's a borkeh whore, he'll probably get over it at some point, and in that situation, he'll probably learn to value his lenses speed all the same.
