/p/ challenge for you

Most of the best pics I have, involve a simple rule
The subject is brighter than the background.
With the obvious exception of Silhouettes.

Can someone prove me wrong? I would like to see good pics where this "rule" is broken.
(No silhouettes though)

Pic unrelated, just a shot from today.

I love dark, intentionally underexposed photos. Let me see...

I'll post three.

I would say that's a pretty limiting rule, just like the rule of thirds... sure it helps to pull your subject out of the background if it's a darker background, but hell, any contrast will do that.

I like these little challenges. Thanks, V

You forgot about... Richard Avedon?

:D

I'm trying to figure out when I can use natural lighting and still have it work out. The first pic is a great example, The last one is borderline, because the lit areas are still the subject.

Anyone else have a good example of this? I can't find anything in my own work..

Yeah, the 3rd one is sorta iffy. I came across this one as well.

I like this one, first one the sky seems to cut the picture in half. And it draws the attention away from the true subject.

I'm not sure if it's important that the subject specifically be brighter than just that there is a difference between the two.

Hmm ya though in general you usually prefer a properly lit subject and a non distracting background. (darker usually works for this)

Your pic here is a good example, even though the plane is obviousl ydarker, it is still very detailed and imposing, and in no way is it being overpowered by the clouds in the background.
Good example

The only rule being that your brain converts the context in which the picture exists into something understandable within varying degrees of success.

i disagree the edges of the building bordering the sky are pointing right at her head
