Sup /p/ I have a scholarship for my school see, and I need to get a camera. The one I have now is some shitty point and shoot and it blows.

I need to get a 35mm slr, what I get?

My teacher said to get a Minolta srt 102, but he looks like a psychopath, and I think I like the ae-1 better, so again, what I get?

Oh and I can spend around 200.

I have a regular AE-1 and its pretty bad ass, if you can find a good bundle on ebay, go for it.

If you can find a Canon AE-1 online for a price you're willing to spend, then go for it. My photography teacher told my class once that a general rule of thumb was to look for SLR cameras that had a good range of options for manual adjustment. He also said that the Japanese cameras from around the 60's onwards were pretty nice for what we would need them for. There's not as huge of a difference between Japanese cameras from the '70's as there are now with all of the digital technology companies push into cameras now.

Basically, if you do your research and it sounds like a good deal, then go for it.

also look at a Nikon FE10 or FM10, they are great little manual cameras

I've heard that the AE-1 is obnoxious to use in full manual mode (since it was Canon's first camera designed for autoexposure). The Minolta SR-T series, on the other hand, is a delight to use in manual mode (with the caveat that you'll have to figure out some way to get the light meter running. Mercury batteries and all that).

So yeah, I'd place my vote with the Minolta.

it is obnoxious. If you must get an FD mount body get the A-1 or save up a little while longer and get an F-1

FE/FE2 is my favourite suggestion because everything's right there in the viewfinder and the match needle scheme is sane. Old fujica m42 bodies are ridiculous cheap these days, though, and you've got all kinds of fun lenses in that mount.
good luck whichever you pick, hope to see your shi all up in /p/
