Hey /p/, I recently got an old Chinon film SLR for a good deal. I forgot about it, and recently dug it up again. I'm wondering whether I should stick with this and learn the ropes of SLRs, or if I should go and drop $1000 or so on a Canon Rebel XSi and a lens.

I would say play with it to learn what it is about. Considering you had to "dig it up" it doesn't sound like you have a huge interest in photography right now and dropping a grand would be a bad move.

It's not that the interest is lacking, it's more that I wasn't so sure about the quality of the camera. I recently read something about how using a film camera when you're still an amateur is a good way to learn more. Or something along those lines.

Also I didn't really like the idea of not being able to upload the photos to my computer, it's just that I couldn't resist the deal I got on it. It also came with some pretty bad-ass lenses, which I'm hoping will fit on newer SLRs.

I'm not 100% on yours, but Chinon on the whole use the Pentax K mount. So got a Pentax if you want to go digital.

Yes it is Pentax K mount.

Are Pentax SLRs any good? I've unfamiliar with them, as I've always been a Canon guy.

Pentax film SLRs are excellent, particularly the pre-K-mount ones.
Pentax DSLRs are quite good at the low and mid range. They don't have a real pro-level camera yet, which makes people take them less seriously than canikon, but they're better cameras than people give them credit for.

this.

trolling and sarcasm aside, pentax can make a heck of a good camera in their respective entry level (k100/200) and midrange (k10/20) segments. you just don't hear about them much because well, canon and nikon have been top dogs for years, even before digital, and pentax was always down with olympus and konica/minolta, and the other excellent camera makers that dont get much attention.

and if you have k mount lenses already, well, might as well make some use of them if you want to go digital, no? unless they're shit lenses.
