Got a pretty much "Do what you want, but do it with research" assigment for photography class.
I'm not thát familiar with portret photography, so I'm going to do it to learn some more.
So /p/eople, please show me some good portret photographists besides the obvious Diana Arbus etcetera.
Especially interested in artists that integrate optical illusions with portrets.

Look up Jeff Bridges photography. He actually has some experimental portrets that he uses a Widelux to make a play on tragedy/comedy masks. The dude abides.

Thanks, looks pretty interesting. I like the distortion the widelux gives. I'm not sure it helps the picture though. I wonder how much I need to justify effects in photography. Are there any renown photographers that do not justify anything, but just do it because it looks nice?

I'm not. But if you want to complain about my English, look at your own first, please?

Okay, but I wasn't complaining about your English, it was more the fact that you spelled it "portret." Since you stated you were in a photo class, I was just making sure you weren't an English speaker to give myself a little hope in the education of children these days.

Ah, I see. It's of course portrait. Portret is how I spell it in my native language. The confusion.

Don't know about optical illusions, but Gillian Wearing does self-portraits with masks so they look like childhood pictures of her and her family. (image related)

Very nice.
It's amazing how real the mask looks.
