D50 vs SD series Nova
Ok, /p/, here's the situation.

I've always loved photography and appriciated good high quality photos. Now I'm going on an extended "trip" to Prague, and I want a good digital camera to take with me to take the best shots I can of the beautiful place. Who knows when I'll be back so I might as well take the best pictures I can.

Now, I've had some camera experience and know a lot of the ins-and-outs.

So onward to the question. I've been considering getting one of the Canon SD series, and while I like the idea of a small pocket camera for all the places I go, I've used my sisters D50 and I love the quality and the features it has.

The price difference on it too is not much more, another $150 or so is the difference between an SD900 and a D50. I also plan on keeping and using the D50 for a long time to come anyways.

So tell me /p/, what would you do?

I would go and read up on the reviews and then kill myself for the inability to understand that i should post photographs instead of lame 'what camera should i get' threads.

I have read all the reviews, all the specs, all the differences. I'm asking about the situation what /p/ would do. Lurk more.

if you can handle the extra bulk the D50 makes, I would definitely say go for the d50, The sd900 is a nice "pocket cam" and can go a few places the d50 most likely wouldn't, BUT given the right lens / lenses, the d50 is sooooooooo much more versatile and your pictures in the end will IMO be more interesting (more flexible options ont eh d50 means, mor night time pics, action shots, ETC)

So d50 if I could carry it and not get it stolen, Otherwise the sd900 isn't a bad option.

that said i'm not a fan of the kit lens on the d50, the 18-70 is much better. So get what you can afford.

Yeah, that's the only thing holding me back and questioning a D50... the bulk. Obviously I can toss it in my backpack or something no problem, but will it be too much? I'm going to be EVERYWHERE in Europe for several months, and I wonder if I'll get tired of hauling it around. Then again I might also get used to it and eventually not even notice it.

Don't get the d40 unless you want to only have a few lenses to choose from, Its also more expensive than the d50 anyway

The d50 and kit lens is actually quite light, (less than a kilogram) its not the weight that poses a problem its just the space it takes up, counting a camera bag you need almost a cubic foot in your backpack or whatever to store it, The battery will last you 800 shots easy on a full charge (even using the flash) So that makes it more convenient than the sd900 in some ways aswell, charges in about 2 hours, so make sure you have the PAL charger or a good adapter.

18-70 weighs a bit more than the 18-55, but IMO its worth it. if you want more telephoto you could buuy the 18-135, although not as high quality as the 18-70, Its still a decent lens, and for the convenience it would probably be worth it for the trip alone.
