Thoughts on the new Sony DSC-W200 as a ultracompact reasonably high quality digital camera? Any other cams in that size with better quality?

Thx!

My question is, why the fuck do you need 12 megapixels on a P&S?

Thats what I was wondering. The sensor is pretty small, though bigger then the T series. Thats alot of pixels crammed into a smaller sensor and I have read that it will create some noise in lower light environments. I hear in normal light conditions it is pretty effective. I am just severly limited in the size of a camera I can have and I wanted something with the best quality in this size. Money isnt a issue. Thoughts?

you're better off getting an slr, there are more effective ways to carry around slr's and get you the quality you desire.

I have been considering an SLR but the ability to slip it in this one pocket when I go lead climbing and touring around I think is more important. Just looking for the best small point and shoot camera I could find. I am not a digital photographer but understand the basics. Perhaps this is the wrong place to ask b/c you all seem much more interested quality over anything. Your right, small cameras won't do that.

But if anyone has something relevant to say about small point and shoot cameras or about this one in particular, I would be very appreciative!

If I were looking at a top of the line P&S, I'd go with Sony's T100. I had a chance to play around with it and it's pretty awesome - nice 3" screen, 5X zoom, and 8 megapixels is more than you'll probably ever need. You can read both reviews on CNET for more "professional" opinions.

A camera you have with you is always going to produce higher quality images than a camera sitting at home because you didn't want to lug a camera bag around with you all day.

12megapixels comes with a sensor twice the size of a 7.1mp camera

Thanks, I just looked at the T-100 but I am thinking because the larger sensor size 1/1.7" vs. 1/2.5" with the T-100, I will get better quality and less noise, and better low night shots. A few more megapixels shouldn't hurt either.

And strangely enough, weighs less than the T-100.
