Sup doods.

I currently have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7.
I want to step up to Digital SLR, and i've been looking through a few entry-level models, namely:

Nikon D60
Olympus E-510
Canon 400D
Pentax K100D Super

And so far, the Pentax K200D appeals to me the most. What does anon think?

if you get the nikon, you're stuck buying the newest lenses.

olympus and pentax are both good. you can mount a million different lenses from different manufacturers on the olympus, and there are lots of K-mount lenses that'll mount on the pentax. instead of the k200, you might consider the K10D. you can get one, after rebates, for about 500 bucks. it's more rugged and has more features than any camera in your current lineup.

Canon's a great choice too. perfectly capable as your first dslr.

You do realize there's something like thirty years of K-mount lenses made by Pentax and others, and decades more of M42 mount lenses than (IIRC) retain full functionality with an adapter?

OP: Same advice we give everybody in your position is to go and play around, and buy the body that feels most comfortable for you to hold. Unless you need/want a specific feature, buying off the spec sheet is not a good idea.

OP here... I don't care about lenses too much for now. We're talking about my first DSLR, not building a multi-thousand dollar lens collection.

My interest has switched from the K200D to the K10D.

Your choice of SLR should be based on the lenses available for it, bodies are easy to use, once you decide on a mount its a much bigger investment.

get a canon 30d

8megapixel with a decent sized screen and they go for around 500 on ebay w/o a lens

The K200d is a good camera. Very nicely built and pleasant to use.
