So I'm completely new to photography, and this is from my first roll. After I developed my roll, I noticed that these splotches showed up on my negative. What causes this, and how can I prevent and/or fix it?

I used 20+ years expired Kodak foma-pan. Took the photos on my nikon FM with 50mm 1.8 series e pancake. I developed the film in diafine.

My neighbor was throwing out his photography equipment. I figured I'd try my hand at photography. I had no intentions of creating INSTANT ART. :(

Kodak does not make Fomapan. Foma makes Fomapan.

Oh, and sorry, I can't help you except to say that it's probably the age of the film like the guy above said. Buy some new Fomapan, it's a pretty cheap film and it's available even cheaper rebadged as Arista EDU.

Nice shot, too, especially for a beginner.

looks like it could be a double exposure

Oh, that's what my neighbor told me. I honestly don't know.

>>279262
I just recently bought 100ft of arista edu.

>>279263
Unless my cameras broken, I didn't double expose.

Dunno how to help you but just checking in to congratulate you on getting an awesome camera and (I assume) darkroom setup. The 50/1.8 Series E isn't a pancake by the way, but it's still nice and small.

Arista EDU is honestly one of the most boring films I've ever worked with. Next time, shoot for Fuji Neopan 100 or 400.

nice photo OP, like others said its probably because of expired film/chemicals.

Did you agitate?

Oh, I've heard people refer to the series e as a pancake so I

What makes a film boring? I've never used any other films before so I don't know what makes a film good or not.

>>279383
My chemicals are new, so it's probably just the film. Like I said earlier I bought 100ft of arista. so I'll try my luck with that.

>>279386
Yeah.

This didn't happen on the whole roll of film though, just a few of the images. I've read about people using expired film for artistic effects. What actually happens when film expires? How long can I keep film before it expires?

I took this photo at a playground. Some kids were having a swing jumping contest.

>*Fixed*

Ok, on this one I noticed the top edges of the film looked like they had "burned" away. I think that was developing error on my part though. I touched the film after I washed them with dish soap and the image wiped away where I touched it. My fried said I should try fixing it for longer. I don't exactly know what fixing does though.

i got something similar when I didn't leave it in the fixer long enough. Do your negs look a bit cloudy?
Jus stick the negs back in fixer for a bit. Just dangle them in there and see what happens.

fixer stops the chemical reaction from... reacting.

that'd be stop bath, champ.

3/10

try harder

It's just a very lackluster film. Contrast isn't great, the tones are nothing special. It works and it's cheap, but Arista EDU to Fuji Neopan is like Kodak Gold compared to Fuji Velvia.

Yeah, everyone knows Kodak Gold is the best.
