Upwards of 90% of what I shoot is with a small sensor camera like this, for the size and handling advantages, and the quieter shutter and a few other things. DSLRs only deliver much better results in low light, where they very much deliver results.
Another option, a little bigger but cheaper and better in many ways (slightly larger sensor, better lens, faster lens) is a used Canon G-series. I know the G2 can be had for uder a hundred dollars on eBay, and it's a great camera. Shoot raw, too, if you ever want to do that. You should be able to stick it in a decent size pants pocket.
