"Six motherfucking frames per second." I wanted to hit him in the mouth.
Yesterday a girl at besybuy kept trying to get me to play with the Canons. Apparently the power of the 1D is derived from its TWO REALLY REALLY FAST PROCESSORS!!! To which I replied, the D3 has dual processors also. "ya know it'll still never be as good as the 1d." Fuck why do I go in best buy?

I don't know. But at my local Best Buy they were selling a 5D next to a 40D, and I wanted to see how much he knew about the two. I asked him what the differences were between them and he said "DUDE. GET THE 5D IT'S 2 MEGAPIXELS MORE THAN THE 40D!"

You know, I laugh at this now, but a scant 4 years ago, I was this person.

(On the plus side, I just assumed I was doing something wrong and put the SLR back down, then educated myself, rather than asking someone)

Oh, and after learning a little bit more, I had this whole big rant about how SLRs were stupid because normal digital cameras would let you see the image on the LCD and so you didn't need all the rigamarole of a reflex mirror just to frame your shot without parallax issues.

I need to remind myself of things like this occasionally so I don't ever forget that I, too, was a moron once, will be a moron in the future, and am probably a moron about something *right now*.

"I never would have thought you could take pictures this good with a camera like that." Said to me by an acquaintance who was newly interested in photography, after seeing some of my photos for the first time and seeing me shoot with a Nikon F4. I was quite a newb at photography, so I was asking this guy at best buy if a new lens would work on an old slr film body. he replied "oh, old lenses wont work on slrs." it took me about 10 minutes to describe to this guy that i wanted a NEW LENS on an OLD SLR FILM CAMERA.

also, when people ask to see my F3 and I show them, they look at the back (where an LCD would be) and say, "so... this isn't digital?"
>> Anonymous
>>154443
It's amazing how stupid people can be, and how much they can forget in five years.

It wasn't long ago that when people would see the back of my DSLR, they would ask "what's that screen for? You mean you can look at the picture right away!?" and now when they see my film SLR it's "How do you look at the pictures, there's no screen? Where does it plug into your computer?" I hate the world.
>> Anonymous
>>154443
Dear Christ yes. I bought a DSLR just to get rid of those pesky noobs who always pestered me with the "Where's the LCD?" questions.

But it's worse now that they don't understand that the screen is for viewing photos and changing settings, not taking the goddamn photo itself.

It's only been 8-ish years since digital cameras went into the mainstream. Has everyone really forgotten what the fuck film is?

I have a TA in one of my classes who is convinced the only way to get the look similar pskaught's ( and the woman who shot the crying babies, her name escapes me)is to have the lighting extremely flat, then adjust every part of the picture using curves in photoshop. The results look god awful

Sigh... It's the "I want it now" mentality. Geez, in the old days (also known as yesterday), you had to wait a whole HOUR to see your photos!

Funny thing: I tossed my PZ-1p to my bro (who uses a D40), to take some shots Christmas morning, and he kept looking at the back at the camera, expecting a quick peek at the photo. I had to remind him to stop doing that.

I actually enjoy the not having lcd part even though i have to deal with those questions. At least im not forced to show photos to n+1 people trough the lcd.

dslr like E-3 that has all the settings available trough buttons with only top lcd would be totally awesome.

Shooting for my schools talent show. Doing my own business, etc. I see some typical scene chick start walking around with her D40 and kit-lens.

I asked a bit later how they turned out and what settings she was using, she had no idea what ISO was, nor what f/stop was. I didn't ask anything else. I asked to see some of hers, she gave me a "I am better than thou" look and said no, for the reason that I don't deserve to see her photo's - quote "you obviously don't know anything about photography - why ask me to see my photo's? You'll just steal my idea's, Pentax sucks anyways"

I wanted to take her piece of shit and smash it in her face.

More than anything I hate spoiled little brats who think they're good at such a thing because their mommies bought them a DIGITAL SLR. Ooohwhowhowh.

So many of them in my school =/ yet whenever i ask to see some work, I get a no.

Last time ive asked these type of people to show me their photos i get some flower shots and the usual deviantfag stuff.

Most of them dont even seem to know basics of photography. Set the camera to auto and press the shutter rules their world.

I once talked to a guy that talked like he was really knowledgeable about lenses. He lost all credibility when he said his friend has a 70-300 F2.8 IS.

A guy at BB tried to convince me to get a Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 as my prime lens for my D80

It's probably just me but when I use a point and shoot that has a viewfinder, I use the viewfinder and not the live view when it comes to subjects that are a reasonable distance away for parallax to not be an issue.

When this one girl asked me to take a picture, I used viewfinder and after that, she gave me this funny look and asked why I used the viewfinder instead of the live view and now it has this ugly empty side which I pointed out can easily be cropped. I could tell she didn't know how to set ISO cause it was all on auto. Quickly hit the gallery button before handing it to her and saw that her photos were badly blurred as if taken while holding the camera at arm's length.

I do this all the time when I'm shooting with a film SLR. The chimping reflex is very deeply ingrained in me. I feel stupid every time.

True, so true. I work at a camera store, and most people who ask for dslrs ask me for advice on which camera to get. As usual, i normally suggest the d40, since 80% of these dslr buyers won't even go to primes. Now, most of the time, when I suggest the d40, this is how it goes

Customer: Nikon d40? This looks nice. How many megapixels is it?
Me: 6 megapixels (This is after explaining to them for 20minutes how the megapixels dont matter much), which is about more than sufficient for your whole page prints.
Customer: 6? I don't think that's good enough for me. You see, I want something more professional since I'm a pro myself (No shit, sherlock)

And there they go off the door a couple minutes later with a spanking brand new d300 with an 18-55mm. These kind of people are the ones who normally go back a couple days after and say that their camera isnt "good" enough, return it, and then bitch about how crappy it was and say that they're returning to their trusty point and shoot since it has more megapixels for a lower price
>> Anonymous
>>154534
Wow, that would really annoy me.
>> Anonymous
>>154534

I get angry about that. I think to myself "God, what a fucking waste of a good camera sitting in that persons hands"

I even say that about the d40, not like it's a HORRIBLE camera, I'm sure if put to proper use it can wield decent photographs. People forget that it's not the camera that makes the photo's its the person using it. We should have a pin-hole thread :D

One other thing I seem to get annoyed by is, exactly what your experience touched on. People thinking that the more expensive the camera the better the photo's they'll take. Yeah, auto-matic mode and crap ass family photo's with a d300.
>> hura
I keep getting asked how many megapixels my xti shoots at (at least I can say 10.1 and impress the feeble of mind) but I'd like for a change to be asked what makes such a big camera so much better. Would be nice if the random noob asking was more curious wouldnt it?
>> Anonymous
>>154534
Oh, god yes. I used to sell cameras, got this shit all the time.

I hate when people refer to a lens of any description as a "zoom". If they call it the "inny-outy bit", that's fine and groovy, because they're retarded and it's not nice to laugh at them. But if they call it a "zoom", they're trying to sound like they know what they're talking about.
>> Anonymous
I never really get stupid questions besides people wanting to take pictures with my camera, which is pretty much out of the question since I don't want them man-handling the little equipment I own and wasting my film.
>> Anonymous
>>154539

The d40 is not a total heap of garbage, that's for sure. Only downside is the af motor. Why Nikon, why?

I use my d40 and 18-70mm (you were expecting to see 18-200mm werent you) when i just need to take quick snaps, which is 80% of the time. Only use my d300 on studio shots, everyone could use the additional functionality.

When I go to buy equipment, I just enter the store, ask for the item I want (or grab it myself, if possible), and pay. They don't even have time to start talking crap with me.

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>154545
>Only downside is the af motor. Why Nikon, why?
1. No AF motor makes the camera cheaper
2. 90% of people who buy low-end SLRs like that never buy another lens
3. Moving towards no AF motors on the low end means they can slowly move towards no AF motors on the high end, which means all the pros have to buy new lenses if they want to upgrade their camera body and keep AF, thus allowing Nikon to claim backwards compatibility all the way to 1957 while still getting people to totally replace their lenses every few years.

Really, I personally am always glad to answer anyone's question if they ask politely. Provided the question isn't completely fucking stupid. I don't get the "can I see pictars?" on film because I used a silver Yashica, most of us monkies can understand the differences.

The zoom question, not to angering really - kinda silly, but if you think about it most of the general public has no idea either way.

What'd kill me is if someone came up while I was shooting something, some decent camera in their hand and asking some ridiculous question that.
