Hey /p/ I've got a Nikon D80 w/ the kit lens and an additional 50mm f/1.8 lens. I use both a lot, probably use the 50mm more. I'm thinking about my next purchase: The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8.

What does /p/ think?
>> Anonymous
I don't know how you shoot, but from what you've said I'd guess a better purchase would be a shorter fast prime. The 28-70 just gives you a little speed and a little bit more telephoto reach than your kit lens, assuming it's just a typical kit lens.

If you're comfortable shooting with a medium telephoto prime to use it as your most common lens, a normal (28-35mm) prime would do you well. Sigma has some good offerings in that range if you're going cheap- the 28/1.8 and the 30/1.4.

Sell the kit lens and buy the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

I am also in the same position, but I am planning to get the 17-50 f/2.8 to replace my 18-135 f/3.5 D80 kit lens. Good idea?

OP here. The kit lens is the 18-135 f/3.5-5.6

I shoot pretty much everything, haven't really gotten a great handle on buildings yet. Portraits I'm decent at, I'm not one for bragging. Nature's fun too.

Critiques accepted, good and bad.

I like, but you might need to do some color correction. I'm not sure but are those leaves suppose to be red ? because they look pinkish.
>> Anonymous
Definitely go for it. The lens is kickass

if you are in melbourne and want to sell a 18-135 please respond

If you've got all the range of the 28-70 covered with your kit lens, and you shoot mostly with a prime anyway, get another prime.

sry, major n00b question.

prime? Do you mean non-zoom?

OP again, because I was actually thinking about getting the 85mm f/1.8

85mm f/1.8 > 28-75mm f/2.8

??

Yes. (In before someone quotes the bullshit on Wikipedia)

>>117672
If you shoot mostly at telephoto and like the compressed look, go for it. It's a great lens.

You'd probably get more flexibility, though, out of a normal prime.

Im the one who posted about the 18-135 lens. Unfortunately, I do not live anywhere around melbore but I can post the lens on amazon and you can buy it from there. I am planning to sell it for $210.00 but I can go lower. post back if you are interested.

I'd go w/ the 85mm lens...but that's just me

OP here. I bought the 18-200mm vr lens.

Nothing to do with Wikipedia. You should call it a fixed focal length lens, not a prime. It is the proper name for it, the one that makes the most sense and matches what the item really is.

Enjoy your failure, Ken lover.
>> Anonymous

prime is a lot shorter than fixed focal lens.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>117910

Yeah, but try and explain that to the rest of the photographic world these days.

>>117905

It's a good lens as long as you didn't pay through the teeth for it. Don't expect miracles, but when stepped down to f/8 or f/11 it can do wonders.

A UV filter on that lens however will only increase CA dramatically, stick a CPL on it instead.

So is "cat" but "cat" is also very wrong. If you must insist on avoiding the harrowing experience of typing a few letters with your presumably painful and deformed club-hand then you could type the often used acronym "FFL" instead.

you shouldve waited a couple weeks for the d80 upgrade. you could have saved a few bucks or you could've just bought the new one, either way, it's a win-win situation.

now, go and return it while you still can.

I'm all for proper usage of words, but meanings evolve and change. It's fine when they do.

I guess we shouldn't call a varifocal lens a "zoom?"
>> Anonymous
I use a 50mm prime most often, but I usually shoot 35mm film. I don't know anything specifically about the D80, but I'd guess a 28mm prime would be the closest to that.

As for my thoughts on your image. Try shooting at a lower ISO, it's really noisy. I think your white balance is ok, but I'd desaturate a little, and then play with curves/levels to make the subject separate better from the background.

It looks like you may have bumped up the saturation yourself because the red seems to be going out of gamut (on firefox at least). Make sure you are shooting in Adobe RGB and never sRGB.

Yeah, and I fucking hate how everyone calls imaging-surface-containing photographic exposure devices "cameras". "Camera" means "room", and my Digital Rebel XTi certainly isn't a room. Imaging-surface-containing photographic exposure device is a lot more accurate.
>> Anonymous
>Make sure you are shooting in Adobe RGB and never sRGB.

This is true if your goal is for a print to hang up somewhere.

If, on the other hand, most of the people seeing your photograph will see it on a computer screen, sRGB is colorspace they'll be using, so one should use that.

So what do you call the zoom when it is attached to a modifier like a TC? It used to be that the zoom would be the PRIME lens in that configuration. Now it isn't. Great bit of "evolution" there, Darwin.

D80 upgrade??

We generally just refer to the teleconverter as "the teleconverter" and the lens as "the lens".

Despite the fact that the teleconverter is, technically, also a lens, I don't think anyone would actually be bothered by that technical ambiguity.

>>117923

it was film. 400 ISO. I'd been having lots of problems with noise and the N75. Any tips?
>> Anonymous
>>117940
1. The "lens."
2. Most photographers never use teleconvertors, or any other attachments. At least not still photographers; I don't know about cinematographers.
>> Anonymous
So it is pointless slang made by idiots, for idiots.
>> Anonymous
>>117940
i call it a zoom attached to a teleconverter and one without the TC a zoom lens. if you did call it a prime zoom lens or whatever the fuck, what would YOU call it when you attach it to a TC?
>> elf_man !!DdAnyoDMfCe
>>117944
From reading user reviews, I'm under the impression that a lot of iso 400 color film tends to be grainier than it should. But it could be the particular brand, or the result of wherever you're taking it to get it developed. And the colors do look oddly magenta, if it was supposed to be pure red. So that might be a color shift from over or under exposing the film, or a problem in development.
>> Anonymous
>>117942
Maybe. At most we'll see a D80s with the new screen and Live View to compete with the XSi, but it's not like it's going to be a major upgrade if it does indeed happen.
>> Anonymous
>>117944
Grain in film is not affected by what the camera body is. A roll of film put into an N75, a disposable camera, an F6, and a Leica MP will all have the exact same amount of grain if everything else is done the same.
>> Anonymous
Saying "prime" is as bad and the same mentality that lead to those "AOL speak" or "leet speak" monkeys that infest the internet and society now.

Slang that does no good other than to confuse things. It isn't a new term that helps. It is a step back. It's devolution, not evolution.
>> Anonymous
>>117942

it's either they'll release a d80 upgrade or they'll discontinue both the d40 and d80 line and release like a d40&d80 lovechild or somethin.
>> Anonymous
>>117959
The D40 is on fire, so there's no way that's getting canned anytime soon.
>> Anonymous
>>117960

The D40 is due for the axe because a new one in the D40/D40x range is coming out. People won't want 6MP cameras when all the other budget cameras are up at 12MP.
>> Anonymous
>>117962
Nah mang, it's all about the D40 dirt cheap and D60 replacing the D40x for the big megapickels.
>> Anonymous
>>117963

That might work. We'll see if Nikon want to sell a SLR that cheap as it could eat into profits.
>> Anonymous
I swear by the 18-70mm lens that I bought with my D70s body three years ago. Still more than sufficient for any of my professional work.

>>117962
If you want a low megapixel camera, there are far better ones available than the D50. Personally, I'm partial to the old Canon Powershot G5 - it's not the most advanced camera in the world, but for all-in-one functionality, ease of use, and plain old fun, it's the best going. Cheap as hell now, as long as you can FIND one.
>> Anonymous
>>117971
D40, my mistake.
>> Anonymous
imo d40 still's better value than the d40x will ever be
