/p/ I took some portraits today and something seems off in all of them. Is it the tight crops or what?

Tips for a newbie with a camera.

These obviously aren't, and aren't meant to be high quality photography, but I mean I want to know how to put photographic value in my pictures...if that makes sense?

exif data was lost in photoshop, but I used an Olympus point and shoot.

I think the first one's shot too wide and too close. That along with the close cropping makes her look.. umm.. big. As if she had a huge jaw. Not too flattering imo.

Right...so looser crops next time then?

I think her face looks too boxed into the picture, and for some reason the small hint of the other eye is distracting, there should have been more of it if it was going to be in the shot at all...

Why are all of these photo's so grainy? What ISO were you shooting with?

I agree with this anon. The first picture could use more space to make her head look less dominating, portrait does not mean EXTREEM CLOSEUP. The second I like but I would have liked to have been able to tell wtf the white expanse on the upper right hand corner was. The fourth one is really obscure, if that had been the OP picture I would have immediately skipped it because it's really boring. Fifth one has the same problem as the first one, if it had less of a tight crop around her face it would be better.

Looks like you were rockin' a wide angle here. Zoom in to telephoto and move back. Wide angles exaggerate perspective and lead to things like XBOXHUEG chins and noses. Telephoto angles compress perspective and make the person look flatter (which is more flattering).

Also: You need to cut about a stop out of those highlights. If your camera lets you change your exposure, EV comp down a stop. If not, throw something in front of the light source to even it out a bit. Her nose and forehead and such are becoming featureless white expanses.

You'd do well on myspace though.
