D40 or D60? Anonymous
So, I've come here asking advice in a conundrum. I am going to get a camera for my birthday, I've decided to get a dslr as I want to pursue a career in photography, i feel that this will be the best way to get a good number of shots ready for a portfolio before i go to college. which of these 2 cameras is better. i know the d40 is cheaper but the d0 has a self cleaning ccd sensor. which of these is better for a beginner who wants to get serious soon after starting?

thanks.

also, which website/store is best to purchase a camera like this from. also will i need more than just the 18-55 lens these cameras come with?

Does anyone have that firefox script that allows you to just check threads and they disappear so you don't have to see them again?

D40 is a poor investment if you want to pursue such a career.

Either look at a D80 or look at another brand.

A Canon XTi has the feature you mentioned and will serve you very, very well.

About the 18-55. Yes, for either brand, you'll probably want a better lens soon as the kit lenses for either brand aren't too good optically, they're moderately slow (not very good for low light photography), have rotating front elements (which translates to a pain in the ass when using polarizer or a directional filter) and a variable aperture.

Before someone says that the Nikon 18-55 is better than Canon's 18-55, let me say: dont decide on your system path because one brand's 90-dollar piece of shit is slightly better than the other's 90-dollar piece of shit.

Regardless of the brand, you might want to try playing with a cheap 50mm F1.8 in addition to the kit lens. It's an excellent investment for either brand.

Oh yes, simple yet effective. When you want your camera to autofocus just spend the 300 on the lens you want, and anotehr 800 dollars, trashing the 500 bucks you spent on the D40.

Canon 40D. Fixed.

OP:

Buy a used Pentax DS or DS2 and a 28mm, 30mm, or 35mm (pick any one you like the look of) lens and a 50mm lens (again, one you like the look of). As for other lenses... what sort of photography do you want to do?

(To the onlookers: I'm saying the Pentax because it's the only entry-level DSLR ever to have two control dials, and because it has more magnification than any crop-sensor DSLR ever except the Kx0D series, which it ties.)

If you're set on Nikon, get a D50 or a D80, and the same lens set-up.

Pentax has more magnification because their sensors are smaller. They therefore produce noisier images and have less latitude than either Canon or Nikon. If he wanted a point and shoot he would have said it.

Pentax doesnt produce full frame cameras either, so you cant upgrade to something like that either.

Want a more visible detail difference? You'll never be able to blur backgrounds as much as you could with any Canon or Nikon, ever.

Pentax dslrs are cropped the hardest. There are no real wide angle lenses for this system under 1500 bucks. You'll never get fisheye on a Pentax.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>144901
Eh? Pentax has 1.5x crop sensors. That's the same as Nikon and slightly larger than Canon.

>>144904
My apologies, I thought they used the Four Thirds bullshit.
>> Anonymous
>>144904
Actually they're, for God-knows-what-reason, 1.53x, while Nikon and Sony are 1.50x flat.

>>144906
Four-thirds actually has less magnification, unless you're going by that 50mm-on-everything nonsense they try to feed us. Which I think you probably are. So let me clarify: "effective magnification," which really is the magnification of the viewfinder.

>>144908
>1.53x

Whoops, just remembered this and checked: the site I got it from used the plain 1.5x. Running the math, the four models of camera mentioned (at 0.621) are wedged between the (.626) Nikon Dx00, D80, and Fuji S5, and the (.6) Konica-Minolta 7D and the Sony Alphail A700.

OP Here, I think I'm just gunna try to push for a d80. It's kind of expensive so thats why i was saying d40 or d60. but i can find a d80 with 2 lenses for like 950. i'm gunna try for the d80 but i'll probably have to settle for a d60.
>> Anonymous
OP again, i have a question, does the d80 have a self cleaning ccd?
>> Anonymous
>>144916
OP, settle for a D50, not a D60. It's a better camera, and probably cheaper.
>> Anonymous
>>144918
there is no nikon d50 you mean a canon d50?
>> Anonymous
>>144920

lol the d50 is a discontinued Nikon model. A badass one to at that. Essentially though any entry level dslr is going to be the same. If it fits nicely in your hand buy it.
>> Anonymous
Nikon D50's a good model if you can find it.
>> Anonymous
>>144917
Don't worry about this. Someone did a test and these barely do anything at all, not enough to affect your images. You'll still have to clean your sensor manually.

What's with the Nikon fanboyism?

what's with any kind of fanboyism?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

I see Sony, Canon, and Pentax fanboyism ITT. Very little Nikon fanboyism. People are suggesting Nikon options because the OP was asking about Nikon options.
