Hey /photography/

I have an assignment to due that's
about taking portraits of people in the environment. People that lived worked and breathed their work like a Guitar maker not a guy playing a guitar with some friends for example.

My question is how do i approach people and persuade them to take their picture?

Many times i have approach people nicely and i get the paranoid answer like "Why are you taking this Picture? What is it For? or i get that head shake or I get ignored/walked away from. I'm not the only one my classmates have experienced this.

Should i keep trying? or do you guys have any tips for me?

The picture i posted was some girl i found on flickr

no one on /p/ actually takes any pictures. they only collect facts and occasionally some gear, which they then talk about and post pictures of for the rest of their remaining lives.

/p/ is the wrong place to ask this question.

You see, /p/ loves low shutter noise and silent focus because /p/ is a stalker.

People are creeped out by stalkers.

If you happen to have friends IRL, that do things other than sit in front of a computor, then ask them if you can photograph them in their natural environment.

I had the same assignment due this semester and got a willing volunteer on the first try. Usually if you expain that you're in school and the nature of the assignment people are pretty willing to be a part of it.

Free lunch and a print for thier troubles usually helps too.

Don't want to take a picture of my mom shes works at home which isn't really part of the assignment anyways and Dad is divorced hadn't seen him since i was 5. I had some really bad times with past teachers like stole their magazines and school material and cheated and got caught and other teachers I have not been close with and or either retired

keep trying, be really nonchalant about it as if you don't really give a fuck if they say no, have reasons for why you're doing it prepared beforehand, stand up straight and be confident

Dress proffessional like in a dress shirt and tie or like wearing a fisherman's vest like a photographer
