Slow Sync Anonymous
Hey /p/, I'm new to photography. I was playing around with my exposure and flash and I produced an interesting effect. I did some research and apparently it's called "Slow Sync." How many of you guys knew about this before? What kind of shots do you use it for? I've been using it for pictures of people, mostly, since it removes the background from consideration even more than a shallow DoF does.

Just wanted to get you guys' views on it. (Pic not taken by me, I have quite a long way to go before I take pictures that good.)

Here's the explanation of how to do it: http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/slow-sync-flash/

Basically it's slow shutter + flash.

I use it for club shots when i do event photography, the external flash freezes the subject whilst the long shutter speed still gets all the club lights and atmosphere.

Just let me dig one up

So basically in low-light situations with some spots of light in the background?

I experimented with snapshots of my family members indoors with plenty of sunlight, and I got some pretty trippy stuff. Half of their face disappears and crazy shit. I'm loving this effect so much that I might use it every time I use a flash.

Just a question, do you use M or Av? I use Av with -2 EV. And maybe +0-1 EV for Flash.

saturday I did a lot of shooting where I gelled (colored) my flash, and set my camera to Tungsten WB, so I could balance flash light with ambient light without getting color casts.

I always use M mode. like on a catwalk I shot at ISO 800 1/160th at f/4, that was 2/3rd stops below correct exposure. then I flashed it in, gives nice results and freezes motion.

oh yeah, more appropriately, its called fill flash. I also use fill flash in broad daylight to kill harsh shadows in portraits

OP cool pic.

I think the strength is the faded lighting on her...

Hey Hey, i always ALWAYS use manual.

What i try and do is usually set the shutter speed at anywhere between 1-5 seconds and just get the person or people to hold still.

I usually just tell them 'DON'T MOVE TILL I MOVE THE CAMERA'...most people comply.

This isn't the best example, and it's handheld, where as i suspect the OP is mounted on a tripod

Floating point exception (core dumped)

Nice.
And that guy on the background looks a bit suspicious.

what the... just noticed my EXIF is CORE DUMPED... shit shouldnt have divided by ZERO...

that should be a 4 second shutter with f/4 at ISO 200

That's why real men use Opera to surf /p/ and look up EXIF when everything else fails.
