hey /p/, I've always enjoyed photography and am looking to get semi-serious about it. I've been reading through that digital vs film thread and I've decided that digital is best for my needs.
now! my question is which does /p/ prefer?
Nikon D50
or
Canon 350D

I've read some reviews for both, either way it dosnt look like I can go wrong but I'm interested in hearing from some owners/users of these.

arighty! thanks!

This is going to turn out exactl the same way. Neither is better, just more suited to different tastes and styles. Just look at the features each has or doesn't have, see which one is more worth the price, and go with it.

The only thing that should make a difference is if you know friends who primarily shoot one or the other. If you have friends with Canon stuff, they'll probably be able to lend you lenses and give you tips on using your camera. Nikkor goes the same way.

But like you said, you can't really go wrong with either. I went with Canon since I liked their higher end lenses a bit more and had shot with the 300D before so I was SURE I'd like it. The D50 would have been a bit of a gamble. But I didn't worry about it since I knew I'd be happy.

try the pentax k100. In body antishake, and the exact same sony-made sensor as the nikon. I love my DL2, and theyre near identical, minus SR and a few minor changes.

op here.

I'm trying out the 350D right now, so far I like it a lot, picture related.

I agree with the second paragraph. If you have friends that shoots Nikon/Canon, it'll be more likely you'll be able to test drive a few lenses. And having someone to talk to about your hobby helps a lot.

I choose the D50. Mostly because the difference between 6~8 MP wasn't big enough to compensate for the dismal grip and poor scroll wheel placement on the XT. I used the XT for 5 minutes and my thumb was raw.

Just for the record, I actually prefer my XT's grip over Nikon models.

Second for the pentax cameras, actually- they're a bit of an underdog, but seem to be packing a lot of good stuff in their bodies. Plus, the ability to mount any K-mount made in the last zillion years = win, considering there were some very nice pentax primes made, and they probably have reasonable values on the used market...and around any school, there will be plenty of k-mount lenses since K1000's are a staple of almost any photography class.

Plus, in a Canon vs. Nikon argument (which gets really stupid/tiring), everyone will leave you alone.

So I herd d50 has no grid you can display =/.

Yeah, that's true. You'll need D70(s) for that. I wonder if D80 has grid..

D80 has grid yes. 4 by 4 grid. I wish it was 3 by 3, so I can apply the rule of thirds. Assignable to the fron function button + command dial to switch it on and off.
