what is a good way to do this if you don't have a tripod or remote for a camera?

>what is a good way to do this if you don't have a tripod or remote for a camera?
Buy a tripod, buy a remote for your camera.

Okay, less flippant answer: Seriously, buy a tripod. You can get a cheap crappy one for $20. It'll be cheap and crappy, but it'll be oodles better than nothing. Unless you're using some monster camera, the $20 tripod will be just as good as the $500 tripod for taking a long exposure on a calm night.

You don't actually need a remote trigger. Most cameras I've used have the option of a 2 sec self timer, which is designed for exactly this purpose. If you've got an SLR and it has mirror lockup, turn that on before starting the 2 second countdown.

You can actually make your own remote control really cheap, I did.
Buy a 2.5mm jack from an electronics shop (radio shack, maplin, etc) along with some normal 4-wire telephone cable and two push to make non-latching switches.

On the Canon DSLRs at least, the ground and first connection on the jack is focus, and the ground and second connection is the shutter.
Wire the switches to the wire and the wire to the jack, plug it in and press the switches.

It basically lets you do everything the normal wired remote does, which is basically providing a shutter button. Set the camera to timer and pressing the trigger will start the timer; set the camera to normal and pressing the button will take a picture.

Alternately, the wireless remote (for the XTi/400D, at least) costs like $20

Don't laugh. I was nearly arrested by Naval Station Pearl Harbor Security after photographing the Arizona Memorial from the Ford Island Bridge. Seems some bored officer that lives in base housing there somehow determined that tall honkey-type guy with military haircut and medium format camera equates terrorist sleeper.

(Full disclosure: anonymous is active-duty military.)

Actually, I was nearly arrested in Boston for photographing a subway station. Got stopped by the cops and questioned for a couple of seconds after taking some pictures of a freeway/underpass at two in the morning.

The upshot of the whole Ford Island thing? Found out that you can apply for a press pass through the base that will enable you to photograph pretty much whatever on that base. All you need to do is contact Pearl Harbor security and they'll fax you the form.

The funny part about this: the day before I took a helicopter tour of the island that had us loitering at about 1000 feet over the sub pens at Pearl Harbor. For the uninitiated: photographing these things from the ground typically results in getting a tour of the base (in handcuffs), seizure of your equipment, and a nice stay in the base jail.
