Sup /p/

I've had my 50mm f/1.8 for about 2 months now, and still i find more than 80% of the pictures being out of focus once i open it on my computer. I know that maybe it's just because I shoot at f/1.8 and suck at holding the camera still, but is there some other tips and tricks for using primes?

Also, i use a d80.

Push the aperture down, nobody's going to die cause you're increasing your dof heheh.

Are you using AF? Digital camera viewfinders arent made for manual focusing, or at least they dont work as well for this purpose as in MF cameras. If you're not using it, try using AF.
>> Anonymous
Shouldn't be that hard to autofocus correctly this day and age (if your oof pictures were using af). If I buy a lens, I want 100% reliability (at least on par with my point and shoot).

Yes, i do use AF and i try to take pictures at f/1.8.

Always a time and place for it. Lenses are softer when they're wide open.

Additionally, you might be forgetting to add a bit of sharpening in post-processing. Most DSLR pictures will benefit from a small bit of sharpening, and postprocessing is needed in most images.

So use some examples (100% crops and the full resized picture) so I can decide on whether I should waste money on this lens.

It's around 150bucks, can't go wrong with that.

It's 90 and if the lens doesn't work then I'm not going to bother with it. I'll just save up for the superior f/1.4.
>> Anonymous
>>204350

They're practically the same thing, only the more expensive one being f/1.4. If you cant get a good photo out of an f/1.8, what makes you think an f/1.4 will?

2/3rds of a stop.
Different lenses; different looks.

Check the shutter speed in the exif for some of the blurry images. You should be shooting at 1/80 or faster on a crop.

Also f/1.8 isn't going to be real sharp and the DOF is tiny. try closing down to say f/2.8 or f/4 and see if you can get stuff in focus.

The guy's complaining that he cant focus for shit at 1.8. How is 2/3rds of a stop of less DOF going to help him?

>>204401

OP here. I didn't say that I was going to get a f/1.4. That was some other random dude.

this whole thread is trolls

we're just missing DC showing his faggot face in here

Are you shooting in JPEG? You can try increasing the in-camera sharpening to +1 or +2 in the shooting menu -- though you may get some artifacts or halos.

Yeah this lens is a bit soft wide open, especially around the edges. It seems to be sharpest from about f/5.6 to f/11. Overall though it's a fantastic lens for the price.

I was the one who was talking about getting a 1.4. I was under the assumption that the 1.8 was broken and the 1.4 would be more reliable.

>>204405
Still waiting for you to post examples so we can see if the lens is broken or just softer than you thought.

When a lens consistently focuses to the rear of what it's supposed to be focusing at (according to the distance scale/AF system). How often it's the lens' fault and not operator error is a fun* topic to discuss on /p/.

*actually not
>> Anonymous
>>204790

How do you fix it?
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>204797
Send it back to Nikon. But I wouldn't do that based on the advice of just one guy.

I hate this
>> Anonymous
Fuck the nikon 1.4

Go with a pentax SMC-takumar 50mm f1.4 by using a M42 to F-mount converter.

But that would require you to quit being a pussy and start learning how to manually focus PROPERLY
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>204805
oh you quaint old slr focus fags, you know manual focus on AF design slr viewfinders is hard regardless of lens but you just go and troll away.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>204811
And then in the thread next door someone's saying that people who shoot and develop b/w are faggots. This is why we can't have nice things, /p/ ;_;

SO fucking worth it, too in this humble Anon's opinion. However, remember that they can fuck with your in-camera light metering.
