Hey /p/. I''ve never really come here before, but I have an interest in photography. I was wondering about a good starter camera, any suggestions? Like, not shitty, but decent, but not over-the-top, either. I need a 35mm for school, so that would be good. I don't know what that even means, though, and I'm sure you guys may rip me an asshole for being a lazy bitch and asking your opinion. But I want you to keep in mind, this camera isn't specifically for school or anything, and I really do have an interest in photography. I'm good with using a camera that's not the best on the market, because I think that a lot of actual talent comes from the shots you take, not what beast of a camera you're taking them with. Is this a right philosophy about it, or does it really actually matter if you have a phenomenal camera?

this picture was taken by one of my friends, I felt compelled to share it with you. In Wisconsin.

Go with Pentax. K10/20D is always a good answer if you're going for a dSLR. K100/200D are also decent cameras if you're short on cash. K1000 is overpriced due to being overpopular, I suggest snagging an m42 mount pentax body; Spotmatic F isn't bad. m42 lenses are cheap as balls and the SMC Takumars are some of the best glass ever made.

Nikon and Canon are also excellent choices but I don't know shit about any specifics with respect to them. Sony has a band of followers as well but I despise Sony as a company and know nothing about their cameras.

Given that your school says you need a 35mm, that most likely means you need a film SLR and you should be able to pick one up with a 50 for under $100 easy off ebay or wherever.

Don't get a big expensive DSLR until you know you actually want to invest in it. Buy an old Nikon FM or a pentax k100/k1000 with a 50mm 1.8. should be anywhere from $50-$150USD. Take the photography class you are signed up for, then decide if you want to get yourself a DSLR

If you don't have talent (like me) an expensive camera won't make you take instantly-good photos.
If I had the time to take a film photography class I would have but I got stuck in yearbook instead and we have to submit like 30 pictures a week so there's no time for me to develop film and I certainly don't have the money for it either.
That's why I went for the D40. It can take good shots if someone good is behind the viewfinder but I suck and they're mediocre, though for the most part they're better than my friend's shots with his Fuji S3 and a fuckton of lenses.
I'm just waiting for next year. I'll be at a school with a student darkroom with almost-free black and white film.

I started with a 35mm Minolta X-700 (camera of the year in 1981) I only used it for about a year before moving on to a DSLR.

I personally have a soft spot for the K1000, but I do agree that some people will ask more than it is worth. I have had a little luck on ebay when I got my wide angle and a teleconverter, but it is VERY hit and miss - you might be looking for a long time before you find something worth what they are asking.

That being said, I really like the K1000. Don't pay more than about $75 for a K1000 in excellent shape with at least one good lens w/ lens and body caps (and possibly a case). If you need it for school, you may not have time to look for deals, but I've seen them ranging from ~$50 to $200 with some even lower.

If you can hit up used camera stores, it is much better since you can hold it and test it first.
