I don't get it. When I look through the thing and spin it it looks the same either way. But there is a little white line on it. What does that do? How do I know when it's 90 degrees away from the sun?

look at something that has reflections coming from odd angles like running water or a car windshield and turn it, then you'll know what it's for.

A polarizer has it's strongest effect when you are physically facing ninety degrees away from the sun. That has nothing to do with it turning. Turning it causes its effects to be stronger or weaker. If you're just looking through it inside, or on a cloudy day, it won't look like it's doing much.
Look, this picture is at minimal effect. Yes, it's a little underexposed, but look at the sky and the reflections.

And here's the exact same shot, nothing changed, except that I've turned the polarizer for maximum effect. See? It darkens the sky and cuts out a lot of reflections. Now go practice on a sunny day.

What I don't understand about those pics is how the one full of reflections basically is the dark and boring dull one. Dark reflections? O_o there's a water reflection on both

It didn't kill all the reflections, but it got rid of enough that the algae colors came through, and those had the interesting patterns.
What I noticed is that the second shot has a longer exposure, and all I did was change the polarizer. By darkening the sky and cutting some of the glare, it metered the overall scene as darker than before, there wasn't all that bright reflected light, and got a more even exposure.

The Pentax K-1000 was my first camera. It may not have many features, but when you know what you are doing, it works like a champ.

Anyway, if you are considering the purchase of a polarizer, get yourself a circular polarizer. I got the majority of my filters in a larger size (at least 58mm instead of 49mm) and a stepping ring. Glad I did, because I can use my old filters with my new camera.

Anyway, a circular polarizer and a 28mm lens (if you don't already have one) are two tools I wished I'd gotten much, much earlier for my K-1000. I seriously don't know how I got by without them in the past.

Funny things to do with polarizers:
1. Find LCD Monitor
2. Display a large white area
3. Rotate polarizing filter until monitor seems black
4. Put clear, die-cast plastic (bottle, CD case, etc.) between camera and monitor
5. ???

I've got a Tokina 28mm lens but the polarizing filter I have is for my 50mm lens (49mm). While I was out shooting today I was using my 50mm and polarizing filter and occasionally my red filter (shooting B&W at the river) and wished I had a wider lens. I think my next investment will be in a few new filters.
