y halo thar /p/

I've been looking in the market for a beginning DSLR (been working with a simple point and shoot for a while). Of course, my bank account isn't exactly fluctuating with monies so I want something that's reasonable with cost but not sacrificing quality overall.

Now, would it be a bad idea for me to look into the Nikon D40? Or are there something you recommend?

My intention with the camera primarily lies within portraits, still-life, action shots, and landscape.

Help? D:

I wouldn't suggest the D40 to anyone. Not being able to meter with AI lenses is one thing, but not having an AF motor is silly.

For the price of a D40 new you could very easily find a clean used D70+kit lens. Check craigslist for older folk upgrading, they tend to care for their gear more.
If you'd prefer to buy from a dealer, you could do a D70+35-70 f/3.3-4.5 from KEH for a little less than that.

Well, on second thought, the D40 might be pretty neat to have with a 45mm pancake AI-P lens on it. Almost pocketable! :3

I checked that up. I'm not sure if I can afford that. :(

What about the D50? I just need something that's affordable (and will be covered by a warranty) and flexible in various degrees.

In other words, most bang for my bucks.
