Not too shabby at all. It'd be worth your while doing some PP on it to see what you can get.

I bet those would still look nice as a print, even if they do show purple fringing close up.

I noticed that, too. Perhaps he shot this through a window.

it's the far end of a minolta 75-300 4.5-5.6, so i knew it was going to be a little purple.

Since i'm too poor/lazy to actually set up a decent blind, i just popped the screen out of my window and opened it enough to get the lens out, got on a low chair to see through the viewfinder, and took pictures.

okay, I'm kind of a newfag at photography, but I noticed my pictures have this once in a while, even if I'm not zoomed in very far... but it isn't uncommon, even with expensive lenses then? I was starting to wonder if I got a shit camera or something

Depends on your definition of "expensive". You'll see it a hell of a lot more on something like a P&S's fixed zoom lens than on a high-end Canon or Nikon pro lens for their SLR systems.

Plus some lenses seem to show much better control over it than others, but perhaps lack in another area. Part of the fun of shopping around for lenses and reading reviews. By fun I mean tedium.

The modern digital darkroom and RAW editing lets you edit a lot of it out.

And there are reports (well, Ken Rockwell) that the latest Nikons automatically remove the CA from pictures.

I wouldn't doubt it on the JPEGs. Why not, anyway? The idea of JPEG on a SLR (or anything, really) is to give the a decent average result with no extra work. More serious photographers can shoot raw.
