It's been a while since I've seen a thread like this, so here goes:

Assignment tiem: (No prizes or anything, just an excuse to go out and get some photos)

I want to see your city in six photos. Show it to me in such a way that - without ever being there - I can feel like I know its streets, its people, and its landscape.
>> Anonymous
This is actually a pretty cool idea. I might try it.
>> Anonymous
What exactly would posses somebody to try and domesticate a hyena? At that starve said hyena?

Do these people think they have any control of it?
>> Anonymous
>>141485
africa only recently (in the last 60 years) went out of the stone age, now they are at the level of european dark ages

and you wonder why they domesticate hieana
you think that first domesticated dogs weren't wolfs, do you?

This is true. Most of the world is still politically organized in a very, very feudal manner.

As for why someone would domesticate a hyena? Hunting, I guess.

It's too bad you asked right now. In most midwestern central states in America, it's snow slush and mud. Asking in mid spring or summer would have been nice.

The females are huge and look like males too. They have a penis type structure that the male puts it's own penis inside as well, rather than a penis/vagina system. No joke. Really aggressive and dangerous animals. Really weird too.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>141607
Agreed. We should do this again when it's not balls-cold out and covered in nigh-featureless whiteness.

That being said, I just went out and took some pictures.

Does /p/ have its own moderator or is it just collectivly janitored/modded?

Sticky about this would really help improve the content/gear ratio.

Afaik, they have a vagina too.

The reason for the penis is abnormally high male hormone levels in the females or something like that.

Hoping I'm not the only one to actually do it.

This was a great idea, by the way. Good job, Op.

I don't care if it's weaksauce; present any city in 6 pictures if you can, old or new pics.

I doing it tonight
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>142245
See, using old pictures just makes this challenge way less interesting. Viz:
1. It doesn't force you to actually go out and take pictures rather than sitting around all day wanking about gear that you never actually use
2. It doesn't make you really think about your city and how best to represent it visually.

Without those, it's not an exercise in photojournalism, it's an exercise in stock photo portfolio management.

And I would much, much rather see responses to this prompt than to see gear thread after gear thread after gear thread with the occasional "What sort of shoes do you like to wear when taking pictures?" and "What MP3 playing software do you use while postprocessing your pictures?" and "How do I shot HDR?" threads.

HOLYSHITGRAIN.

Kinda like it, though. Looks almost like an abstract.

>>143655
There's something about this one that I don't really like, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I don't think it's just that it's blurry. It has lots of elements that should make for a good photo but... I dunno, they just don't seem to be coming together. Might just be me.

>>143656
Eh. Traffic jam, not too interesting.

>>143657
Kind of interesting. Looks like your camera's got some underexposure issues, though.

>>143658
I would like this a lot more if you hadn't gotten the wall from the previous shot in the frame. It might have stood up well on its own, but after the previous one, my brain just goes "Oh, so he took two steps to the right and flicked the shutter again?"

>>143659
Good silhouette. Shame the lab decided to bring up the exposure of those shadow areas.

My overall impression of the series as a whole is more favorable than my impression of the individual shots. I don't think the frames work that well as standalone shots, but I do think it does give me a good feel for Manila, and (unlike mine) the captions aren't required to generate the impression you were going for.
>> angrylittleboy !wrJcGUHncE
>>143661
Thanks man

>>143670
Yeah, as individual frames, they're pretty weak, but it was nice to try and have these individual frames work together towards one cohesive statement (nice topic, OP).

Before, I wasn't really bothered about the grain (film that's 2 years past expiry date, asa100), but then I had a mix of non-grainy frames and really grainy ones in the same roll. Is it because of exposure problems? I'm just guesstimating and using sunny-16 as a guide, so it's certain that I would miss on a lot of shots when it comes to proper exposure.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>143680
>Is it because of exposure problems? I'm just guesstimating and using sunny-16 as a guide
Ahhh. Yeah, that'd do it.

The problem isn't the underexposure so much as the fact that photo labs that deal in C41 "correct" your exposure for you when they print. I.e., if your frame's really dark, they'll expose the hell out of the negative when they make the print. Sucks if you were going for a low-key exposure or a silhouette or something, but it's nice if you're the average film shooter who doesn't know dum-diddly-do about exposure and just wants your pictures to look kind of like the thing you were looking at when you took the picture.

Anyway, that's what made the grain XBOXHUEG like that, especially in the total shadow areas since there wasn't really any shadow detail to pick up.

Pro Tip: When you're shooting color negative, you might want to try overexposing by a stop or so.
>> angrylittleboy !wrJcGUHncE
>>143681
Cool, thanks for the tip.
>> parshimers !y2fz.HIyUQ

I do not live in a city, ergo I cannot photograph my city. Too rural. I can, however, get some pictures of the county I live in in general. It's small and has only about 6000 people so it's basically a spread out and shitty ghetto of a city.

Needs five more pictures.

Go out in the daylight around sunset. There were some people down on the sidewalk in that shot, you could've gone and talked to them and asked if you could take their picture.

Pulling up Google Maps, your town has a few parks, some big industrial areas, and easy access to Lake Ontario (or at least a bay in Lake Ontario). You can likely find some good pictures in all of these.

Get back to work. Try to get your shots in before>>145435steals your first choices.

This is the person who posted above you.

I'm going maybe today, but, anyways.

The industrial sector is really hard to get into, there was only once where I was able to drive in, park, take a few shots before some worker guys began asking what we were doing there. The lake is totally overshot, it's also really boring too.

Hamilton is a nice place.
