Hi guys,

I'm new to SLR photography - i took this shot whilst on holiday, it's an open-air work shop where you can have just about anything made or fixed. i know its not the best example of panning but i barely had time to pick up the camera before we whizzed by it. what do u think?

Also any tips on how to take natural photographs before people realise you're pointing a camera at them and change their behaviour so much that the moment is ruined.

cheers guys

Tip no 1: don't shoot from a moving vehicle.

Easiest way to do it (I've found) is to use a relatively wide lens (~30mm) and shoot from the hip, but don't hold your camera as you would when shooting normally. i.e. use your thumb to hit the shutter or something. After all, its digital, so you can afford to make mistakes. The wide angle means the you can tweak composition afterwards by cropping in. And the viewpoint is great for engaging candids of children.

If possigle, use an IF lens with an internal motor, they're much more covert and less likely to attract attention

If you do get rumbled, smile, walk up to them and chat, then ask if you can take their picture again. Show them the results of those, then walk away.

Tip no 1: don't shoot from a moving vehicle.

For when you're walking around, the easiest way to do it, I've found, is to use a relatively wide lens (around 30mm) and shoot from the hip, but don't hold your camera as you would when shooting normally. i.e. use your thumb to hit the shutter, so it doesn't look like you're using the camera to take photos. After all, its digital, so you can afford to make mistakes and shoot a lot of frames. The wide angle means the you can tweak composition afterwards by cropping in. And the viewpoint is great for engaging candids of children.

If possible, use an internally focusing lens with an internal motor, they're much more covert and less likely to attract attention.

If you do get rumbled, smile, walk up to them and chat, then ask if you can take their picture again. Show them the results of those, then walk away.

In foreign climes (especially southern africa), you may be asked for money, just shake your head and walk away unless you feel they have gone out of their way to help you, in which case, be subtle about giving them anything, or you may find yourself overwhelmed by small children asking for money (That one's from experience).

Tip Two: Don't shoot from the hip. Even Garry Winogrand made a point of actually composing every shot.

We all do shoot from the hip from time to time, because our balls are all about a fourth of the size of Winogrand's, but it's not a "tip" to be handing out.

sorry!

i suppose it all comes down to how likely you are to get knifed in the area you're in :-S

That's the worst advice for shooting candid photos that I've ever heard.

I've always felt that the best way to do it is just take a picture. When you hide and sneak around to get pictures you quit being a photographer and become a voyeur. If you see a scene, start photographing it and keep shooting until you get the photo you want. Rather than sneaking pictures when the person isn't paying attention, try engaging your subject so that they become comfortable with your presence. Talk to people, ask them about themselves and what they're doing, give them the opportunity to open up to the camera.

I'll give you a hint. Choose a new tripcode, newfag.

Or else I'll fucking shoot you.

as the OP said, they then alter their behaviour to some degree. I was simply passing on advice from my own experience of what works.
Being a photographer is not just about composition, its also about choosing your subject, timing the shutter release exactly to capture the moment, and subsequently capturing the moment. where you shoot from has little bearing on these three things. Like the OP said, if people are aware of you photographing them, then they change their behaviour, and the thing which drew you to the shot may be lost.

nobody's using a tripcode in this thread retard (or /b/tard, your choice)

TRIPFAGING.

I advise the other way, get a very long lense (300+) and sit as far away as you can, then you can shoot natural looking photos without anyone seeing you.

The wide lense / low angle looks ok (ive got a bunch in my gallery i cba to find) but it takes a lot of spacial skills to point the camera at something and get it in exactly the right frame.

Digital / really rich film kids only.

Are you really allowed to call someone else a newfag while
1. Threatening Internet violence you have zero ability to follow through on due to the anonymous nature of 4chan
2. Claiming a namefag with no tripcode is a tripfag
?

Nah even worse, he called names tripcodes.

Learn to anticipate. Shoot a lot of pictures out there of people. Shoot more. Shoot a lot more.

Later on, you'd be able to shoot at the right moment and get that shot before your subject can even react.

i concur, you won't be able to be stealthy with your cam unless you can use it without thinking and the only way thats gonna happen is to shoot as much as possible and learn every in and out of your cam. Ultimately you should be able to envision and compose the shot before you even put the viewfinder up to your eye that way the camera is only pointed at the subject for a brief moment

>>74360
i personally think the ability to shoot from the hip is something you gain from knowing your camera/lenses very well and is just another tool in your arsenal rather than something to really focus on doing.
