canon g9 Anonymous
hai

I'm on the edge of buying a Canon G9, what do you guys think of it? And I also wonder.. would I be abel to take these kind of photos? If not, which cam would manage?

the picture comes from wired.com their "red photo competition"

If you are really serious then a SLR of some sort would be a better investment.

If you are on a budget and just want to learn, then a Canon A series.

overpriced.

I guess it's already a common consensus here in /p/ that it's either a dslr or a powershot a-series.
>> Anonymous
so you say either getting serious and buy a SLR
OR buy the overprices G9 and learn?

thanks for answers.

thats not really what they said at all... except the slr part

buy a dslr or buy a powershot a-series. anything in-between like the g9 is a waste of money.

I think you require some EXTREM SHUTTER SPEED for images like this. SLRs have a lot faster shutters than point and shoot cameras, powershot a-series or g-series. I wouldn't expect to obtain results like this just because you spent more on a p&s. Other than that, I have no other advice to contribute.

No, you just need a flash in a dark room. If you had a sound-activated trigger for the flash, that would be even better, but not necessary.

>SLRs have a lot faster shutters than point and shoot cameras

*Precisely* the opposite. Most point-and-shoot cameras have no mechanical shutters at all, thus the maximum "shutter speed" is limited only by CCD control circuitry, plus they can sync with flash at any speed. The problem is that superfast shutter speeds are usually blocked in firmware, but there are some ways to solve that (for instance, several Canon compacts go up to 1/25000 with CHDK installed)

The shutters are these cameras are so freakishly quiet that if you bring the camera up to your eye, focus, press the shutter, and bring it back down fast and subtly enough you can take a photograph of someone right next to you without them noticing. Usually involves some measure of prefocusing and holding the camera in the hand with the strap around your wrist instead of around your neck.

*on these cameras

oh, lol

i read it as, they won't even notice if your technique is good

like, they won't know if you're holding the camera right or not

I have a G9, the images are sharp up close but it will never be as good as a real DSLR.
Oh and the shutter goes to 1/2500 in Tv.
