Hey /p/, I'm getting a D70s, an 18-55mm, a 70-300mm, and two extra battery packs for about $780. It's got less than 15k actuations because it was just my cousin's studio cam. I've got experience using a dSLR by borrowing his D50 and being backup but this will essentially be my first dSLR and I don't know much when it comes to setting up a nice set and I don't have much money.

tldr: basically, I'm just asking what else should I get to go with it and in what order should I get them because I still need cash.

I'm thinking first a fast prime like the 50mm 1.8 followed by a flash like the SB400.

600

Lemme rephrase that. Is the SB 600 worth the extra money or is the SB400 enough for most situations?

I can't follow /p/'s method of "lulz, throw moar money at it" when it comes to obtaining gear. I'm only survivng on a College scholarship and allowance :/

define 'most' situations.

everyone has different shooting habits, know what i mean?

Grab the 600, i really can't see the 400 being any help

is the 70-300 the new VR version or the older clunkier one?

The D70s will do you fine.

Thanks, I guess I'm going with the SB-600. That said, should I get a 50mm 1.8 first or the flash? It'll take me at most a month to save up for the lens but two months to save up for the flash.

fuck... that's a hard one... i had a choice between the 600 and the 50 1.4D... i ended up buying both at the same time.

It depends on your shooting habits. If you're gonna need the flash more grab that, otherwise if you don't do much indoor low light, grab the 50.

The f/1.8 isn't going to be as much help as you actually thnk it is with regards to low light. You still need to pump the ISO and with the D70s that's not something you really want to do.
