I would have seriously felt sorry for the guy, if it wasn't for his spelling. And the Mac. Still, I wonder (and doubt) if he ever got his stuff back.

Did /p/ ever lost anything precious out of their gear, and how? Theft, accident, breakage due to excessive use (unlikely, given amounts of time you spend arguing over meaningless crap instead of taking photos), anything.

I was lucky enough, and the closest would be wasting a roll of B&W film I was pushing 200@800. I followed the prescribed times for push processing, but ended with virtually clean strip of film. Which taught me to really test before experimenting with even mildly valuable shots.

The most precious thing I ever lost was hundreds of hours arguing with faggots on /p/.

This is why you buy insurance. I can have my stuff stolen anywhere in the world and it's covered and I only pay $35 a year.

DO IT FAGGOTS

where? do you get insurance?

Mine is through MetLife. I have renter's insurance for the minimum coverage they provide ($15,000 coverage) for ~$160 a year.

To insure my camera & lenses outside of the home is $35 extra a year.

If you live on your own, you should get both. If you live with your parents or are in college, get them to add your gear to their homeowners/renters insurance. If they aren't tards, theyll have it.

$160/year is not so bad.
Even with the extra $35 that is less than $20/month...

What are the conditions though? Just theft/fire/flood? Or breakage too?

I have insurance here in Brazil. I pay something like 250$/year and it covers fire/flood/theft/breakage and lost.

Yeah fire/theft/flood. $500 deductible per "incident"

It covers if someone hurts themselves in your place, covers your hotel if your place burns down, etc.

Everyone should get it if they have lots of stuff that they couldnt replace on their own.

$500 deductible?
Uh, so for a camera payout you'd get $200 or so?

Fucking lame.

This is why you need to make backups and encrypt your data.

I also shoot mostly with old film cameras so most of the thieves are unlikely to take the negatives with em. Some of them might even stay the hell away from film gear since its quite hard to sell forward these days without getting yourself caught.

Also insurance combined with secure backups and encryption is the only way to not to lose anything valuable. Data on hard drive is always worth more than the laptop itself.

Depends on how much your gear is worth. If you have a $2,000 setup you'd get a payout of $1,500 if it got stolen.

Not the full amount, but a LOT better than nothing.

well my camera was $1100 new, my lenses and other shit put it around $3k if my whole bag got stolen.. i'd get $2500 reimbursement.. not too bad

Lesson: backup your fucking data.

The deductible and rates will vary from policy to policy. Shop around for the best deals and read all the fine print.

Often you will pay higher rates to get a lower deductible with any type of insurance. You've got to get the balance right to please yourself and suit your set up.

Equipment damage during traveling (esp. airlines)? Because the travel insurance offered by airlines is so useless. I once actually wasted an hour or so to read all T&Cs, and fuck if I'm paying extra for a chance they would refund my clothes (and not the too expensive ones), in case I lost my luggage completely.
