Hey there /p/. I've never been much of a photographer, but I've been wanting to give it a try for a time now and my family finally took the hint and got me a Konika Minolta Maxxum 5D as a present.

I dont know much about cameras, but I've managed to get a couple good shots with this. I dont think I'm going to change it for a long while, but just for curiosity, is this considered a good camera by you connosieurs?

Its fine, it has inbuild stabalisation and enough resolution (6MP).

Sony bought KM a while back so all the new sony stuff you see for SLRs works on it fine.

Minolta made a lot of nice cameras and gear in the past. You should have a lot of fun with it. It'll let you experiment a lot more than the P&S compacts. Have fun and make sure to Google for basic guides and samples of work.

Oh yeah, if you are looking for more things in the future then eBay and such will have all manner of things for your camera too, as well as the new Sony stuff that Butterfly mentioned.

As tempting as it is to start buying goodies for it, try to stick with what you've got and learn with it though. It's easy to go daft with it and end up swamped with toys.

Thanks for the tips. I've got 2 lenses, a big one that came from my dads old camera (a Minolta 5000), I dont know what you call it, it says AF Lens 70-210, and a Macro lens which also came from my dads old camera, it's a good lens from my experience with it, and he assures me it is his favourite, since he used it for work (He's a microsurgeon and uses his cameras to photograph his work).

Other than that, a Polarizing lens, and that's it.

I dont think I'll need much more for now.

Welcome to your new home. If the 70-210 and fixed macro (probably a long one) are your only lens you'll probably want to get something a little easier to work with in normal enviroments.

Pick up a 2nd hand kit lens 18-70/3.5-5.6 for cheap (they should be) and you'll be fine. Your dads camera will work with most of the new lens (any non-crop) so see if you can borrow that and play with film too.

Thanks again. Yeah, I've considered messing around with film, but since I cant even find the 35mm film I need here, I dont think I can play around too much with it.

The Macro isnt fixed, I think. It says it can go from "infinity" m (I dont get it), to 2cm.

If thats the only scale on it (which i expect it is) thats the focus ring, it can focus on objects as close as 2cm or as far away as infinity, the reason it is a macro lens and presumably has macro written on it, is that focusing at 2cm produces an image on the sensor larger or equivilent than the object its focusing on (in theory).

There will be another number followed by mm that gives its actual focal length, i expect this to be 90 or above.

Here's some shots I just took.

This is what I see outside my living room window. Shot using the big lens.

Err... Yeah, it's the focal lenght. There are 2 numbers followed by mm on the lens. The whole line were they are written reads "MAXXUM AF MACRO 50mm 1:2.8(32) Ø55".

Now, a shot of my dad's camera and the lenses I was telling you about. I used another Macro lens he had for this one, so that you could see the ones I'm using.

Its the 50/2.8 macro, have a look on the site i posted earlier to see any reviews etc about it (should be loads). The lens itself is fine but id still suggest getting the kit lens and sticking with that till you figure out what else you need.
