all you dopes need to do an experiment - hold your camera the way you are soooooooo certain is right and see how many degrees you can rotate your wrist CCW (looking from the back). Now reverse it - most people can turn twice as many degrees, plus you can rotate CW
Lastly OP - I don't who that guy in the pic is and I don't know how good a shooter he is, but I've never in my entire life looked at a photo and said "oh, this shots no good because the guy didn't hold the camera right.
You need to grow up
>> FrtFlks !!Ez7/DaRmPG+
>>269246
With that handholding method you don't rotate your wrist - you roll the zoom/focus ring between your fingers. That way your hand is still stabilising the lens and body.
>> Anonymous
>>269253
I bet you wonder an awful lot why you can't focus quickly, when using a mf lens. If you use your wrist you can go from infinity to closest in one motion. The lens is support - by the thumb.
My point was not that this is the only way, but that when idiots say that it's wrong that they don't know what the fuck they're talking about
>> Anonymous
it might not be the best way to hold a camera but there is no " incorrect " way to hold a camera

people and their stupid " rules "
>> FrtFlks !!Ez7/DaRmPG+
>>269258
Not really. A single roll of my thumb (with my other fingers held still) does the infinity to closest thing. But whatever works for you I guess. I shoot a lot at night so I try to be as stable as possible.
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH
Isn't this the same thing as saying

Touch typing is the correct way to type? But you can still type not using the standard finger-to-key setup..

Whatever works for the person who is hold the camera is the correct way for them. Although there are alternatives. *shrug*
>> Anonymous
>>.269264

If you shoot at night you presumably are using fast lenses (normal and short). If so, there is not much weight. Secondly, with the hand as shown in the photo. The left elbow is further out (in fact you can hav the elbow braced against your ribcage. To shoot at slow speeds it's best to stabilize the camera at three points - right hand, eye, left hand - but a "tripod" becomes more stable as the three "feet" are farther apart. So with the hand as in the picture and realitely short lenses, you'd actually have more stability.
Please note - I am NOT trying to get anyone to switch. I just think that it's unfortunate that people keep posting this kind of stuff as if it were written in stone when they haven't even thought it through.
>> FrtFlks !!Ez7/DaRmPG+
>>269267
Yep, I do that with short lenses. I'm talking about using zooms, it just feels more comfortable the other way round. Not that I'm saying your wrong and I'm right, just putting a different spin on things.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>269268
I just pulled out one of my cameras and a few lenses. My hands are quite large. With the barrel of the lens resting on my left palm there is absolutely no way to rotate the focus ring more than about 10 degree in either direction with the thumb and index finger. The only way to get a sizable fraction of the rotation available with the hand the other way is to support the lens by the focus ring.

Next - if you shot normal and short lenses, and I assume that you're man and that your hands are not that much smaller than mine, there is no way to support the lens in the palm and not have the thumb and index finger ahead of the front of the lens!
So what you are saying, kind of doesn't make any sense. Please take a shot of your hand holding as you described with a normal or short lens mounted

>> FrtFlks !!Ez7/DaRmPG+
You sure lack reading comprehension don't you?

Where the fuck did I say that your way was wrong? You wondered how people can use their lenses that way, and I provided an explanation. In fact, you probably didn't even need one, you just had to pick up a camera and hold a lens that way to figure it out, but you're too fucking stupid to adjust your sausage fingers so instead you come on here and start giving advice no one needs. I've got a camera with a built-in vertical grip, so it makes using small lenses pretty weird. I use a sort of a modified version of the standard grip, where my fingers are supporting and operating the lens, but my palm is under the grip and supporting it. Seems to make for pretty good stability, actually.

I agree with OP, but with a small lens, whatever works. With larger lens, its almost impossible to support the weight with my right hand. Also with the heavier lens, it's probably not a good idea to support all that weight by the lens mount alone either, which is another reason why the left hand is better off underneath.

Sometimes I get tired while shooting a football game and I just kinda lean on the camera lens while it's on a monopod.
