Sup /p/

I've gotten my first job, and i told myself I would buy a DSLR as soon as i could afford one. I do not have an incredibly in depth knowledge of photography, however I do have some (i took a photography course at school last year lul). I am looking for a decent beginner camera, however I would like a camera that I will not grow out of in a year.

Right now I am looking at the pentax k200d with a 18-55mm DA lens (which i believe is the standard "all around" sorta lens.). i would prefer to keep my budget around 500-600 dollars, but I am willing to go as high as 750 if i really have too. recommendations?

another question, I have a old nikon SLR from like, 91. it has a 28-85mm AF nikkor lens. would this be compatible with a modern DSLR? or are the lens' different.

thanks.

Get a D80 body and use that old lens. Cameras don't really grow out or become obsolete. A camera from 2006 in good shape will still take the same pictures even if it's been succeeded by countless other generations.

The Pentax is a good camera, but yeah, go for a Nikon seeing as you already have a lens. Bring it with you when you're testing them in the shop if you're so unsure.

That's just about right. The D90 is coming out soon though so the price might go down but I'm not sure.

the K200D is a phenomenal camera in that price range. and the 18-55 kit lens that comes with it is one of the best kit lenses around.

the only problem with this camera is the AF performance in low light.

As you get better, and want to get different shots, you will end up buying new lenses. Don't waste money later by going with a Nikon now. You have to pay for the anti-shake when they build it into the lens. Pentax is more cost effective in the long run. You won't be sorry.

You also get to be unique. I've gone to places and seen hoards of canikon photographers, but not one Pentaxian (other than myself).

Yes but once he buys his m42 adapter and starts using taks the AF point is moot.
