Okay, trying my hand at "street photography" (read: shooting strangers). A bit hard to come out of my shell and take pictures of people I don't know, especially when some return with grimacing looks on their faces.

any tips? in b4 BW INSTANT ART

Technically, they look pretty nice. Though the vignetting is a tad overbearing, for me at least.

First one is really good. The color doesn't work for the second one, but the composition is good. Only tips are not to mind the grimacing looks. Just shoot.

oh no, did someone say vignetting?
>> Anonymous
>>149350
Composition just doesn't work here. Nice moment, but it doesn't come together. In a photograph, everything either works or it doesn't. This doesn't mean everything has to be "perfect" individually, but that it all has to come together cohesively. Like, if it's underexposed by three stops and out of focus, that doesn't matter if it somehow comes together well to say what you were trying to say. But if, like here, one thing is good but the rest isn't, throw it out.
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
>>149355
No, mostly just annoyed me with questions as to why I was taking their picture. "Are you with the newspaper" "Why do you want my picture" "Who are you"

I made conversation with a few people, but they usually waste 15 minutes jabbering on about their problems.
>> hal9000 !a4fa8BKGtQ
Also, how close are you getting? Whenever I hear "street photography" it tends to be in the context of wide lenses and getting pretty close to the subject. Cartier-Bresson, etc.

That is indeed the hardest thing for me to do, and I think for a lot of people, but there's a huge difference between using a midrange telephoto and really getting up close and personal. In favour of the latter, depending on your purpose, of course.

Cool shots. I like the first best, but i'd apply some de-vignetting on it, it's a bit too dark with it being black and white and all. On the others it fits better imo.

i love the first one, i'd love it more if it didnt have fake vignette on it

I'm using a 50mm on a crop-sensor body, so it's pretty in-your-face. This lady was feeding a bunch of birds, when when I started taking pictures, she looked at me, so I approached and talked to her. Noticing her think accent, I asked where she was from, to which she replied she was from Ukraine. I speak Russian, so she spent the next 20 minutes talking about how much she doesn't like Americans.

there's a difference between fixing exposure and wb compared to adding vignetting on purpose for INSTANT ART

also on every single picture because it's awesome like deviantart borders
>> hal9000 !a4fa8BKGtQ
>>149398

I like that one. The composition is very simple and clean, and the colours really click.
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
>>149408
Whatever, it's my style .. I think it (usually) frames the picture nicely. Yeah, it's an effect. Yeah, I add it in on purpose. I like it. I think it makes my pictures look better, so I'll keep doing it.
>> Anonymous
>>149408
if it makes the final product more interesting to look at and helps focus the eyes on the subject, WHO CARES?

Seriously, quit being so damn pretentious. If we're gonna cry about technicalities then fixing exposure is just as bad because TRUE PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS get it right the first time.
>> Anonymous
>>149417

again, there's a difference between using it once to make a picture better

but when you do it automatically as part of your workflow, then it's just fucking retarded

it's not a style
>> Anonymous
>>149419
Funny...I can recognize most of these pictures as the OPs work (from seeing their previous threads) due to the overall tone of the pictures combined with the vignetting. Unique or not, I think that counts as a style.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
Vignetting = too harsh
However I like the first pic, good use of B+W, nice and contrasty
>> hal9000 !a4fa8BKGtQ
>>149419
Seriously? Vignetting like that is something purposefully done in post to achieve an end goal, similar to burning or dodging an area to direct attention. Just because the process is somewhat streamlined digitally doesnt mean its bullshit.
>> Depressed Cheesecake !wFh1Fw9wBU
Okay, it doesn't matter, I am not going to get into a pissing contest over what is artistic and what is of poor taste. I'm mostly looking to improve on my overall composition; I want it to take a style of a minimalistic and somewhat downtempo mood. I'm not into photography to please people, I'm into it because it's pure, because it sets me free, because it empowers me.

EVERYONE is, youve been taught what is "pleasing" all your life, your idea of it may be slightly different from everyone else, but photography and art is all about peer review. Your photo's don't mean shit without someone telling you they are good, And thats why you posted them on here

Self improvement is masturbation. Now self destruction...

very nice, i like how you framed the bench to the far right but the lady sits to left of the bench so she is centered in the frame.

Good show; you're doing perfect. The processing you do usually improves your work, and you're a
natural master of the focal length you've chosen and the small depth of field you're working at. You're one of the better photographers on /p/, and you've done one of the most important things: decided what you like and stuck with it.

The first one and>>149398are downright great.

what the fuck does that have to do with anything

if you use it to give more attention to something in a photo, that's great

but if you AUTOMATICALLY apply it to EVERY picture you take, then it's just plain wrong

I say that because that's the impression I got from your anti-vignetting posts, that perhaps the existence of an Easy Vignette Slider (tm) was what bothered you. You know, considering the fact that OP doesn't imply that its "AUTOMATICALLY applied to EVERY picture taken", but rather only when deemed appropriate. Yeah, you're right. It's not like everyone uses only a few lenses with the same look for all their photographs. And everyone always would flip up their films, too. Winogrand spent an hour before he went out walking deciding whether to use Tri-X or T-Max, you know. And no one ever used the same developing times for their stuff. That'd just be stupid!

(I put special attention to each shot I process, but I do usually go for a consistent look. If I was less of an analfag, I'd probably automate some things. What I'm getting at is there's something to be said for consistent style and authorship. Winogrand always shot Tri-X (T-Max didn't exist in his lifetime, I don't think) with a 28mm Canon lens on a Leica. Cartier-Bresson shot whatever Ilford's ISO 400 film was, with a 50mm Elmar or Summicron. When he shot film, David Alan Harvey shot Velvia 50 with a 35 Summilux, and underexposed to get really inky blacks. He goes for the same look now with his M8. Etc. Etc.)

Just curious, can you post some of YOUR pictures for comparison?

Use Channel mixer, which you probably are.

Something that improves the bokeh in a lot of black and white photographs (Inot all) is this:

1. New layer.
2. Set to soft light, check the "Fill with neutral color" box. (Do these for all your dodging and burning, for some reason it makes it look a lot better, though I don't know why.)
3. Select burn tool, set it to highlights. Burn all the out of focus areas.
4. Adjust opacity of the layer to taste.
>> beethy !HJGkSBB3Ao
>>149473
he keeps doing it because he feels it's a part of his style, is it so hard to grasp that idea? you can keep bitching and reminding him of how much it sucks, but this would do fuck all.
instead why not give him some helpful criticism on why it doesn't work with certain photos.
unless you can't.
