So /p/, today I went to a nearby Kodak to develop some Advantix and 135. Two 36's of 135, three 40's of advantix, and one already processed 25 advantix. It took them four fucking hours to process and scan the whole thing and I have to come back tomorrow because one of the advantix rolls got error'd. Any filmfags in Metro Manila know of any REAL photo labs? Also, I wasn't shooting advantix by choice, they were just laying around. Photo quality is close to that of a 2004 camera phone. And they didn't include all of my images. I took some test shots on the 135 to see if the metering works and they didn't bother scanning them cause I can see them just fine on the negatives. At least they're all a good 9.2 megapixels so I can shoop and resize them.

If previous paragraph is tl:dr for you, don't mind it.

Well that ends my rant and on to my main issue. The attached photo was taken with an old Canon A-1 and a 50mm 1.4 and am I right in assuming that light leaks into the body? Not all photos have it though, some do, and some don't and I'm trying to isolate the cause but it looks like my film advance mechanism isn't working well because I see some ghosting on some frames.

And FUCK YEAH, real bokeh on a 70-210mm f/4

and another FUCK YEAH, real lens flare on a 24mm f/2.8 though I don't remember exactly what aperture I set it on.

And if it isn't obvious, this is the only SLR I have. I can't afford a dSLR and my only other camera is a Canon A550. So this Canon A-1 and set of lenses are very important to me and I'd really like to make them work. Halp!

btw, these are all straight from the CD Kodak gave me, just resized. I'll try fixing them with shooping later.

I'm also having my doubts about the whole "It's the photographer, not the camera." thing. I still believe in that saying but now I truly believe an SLR will be really fucking useful. My P&S sucks it in low light, has only two stops (not counting zooming) that don't even affect DOF which means no bokeh as well, and lame zoom that's only usable on a bright sunny day. Those are big handicaps if I want to rank with the "pros".

Also, film = insant art

they fucking scratched the shit out of your film lol

he aint kidding.

look into developing film yourself.
it can be expensive, but lots of fun!

black and white is okay, but color is just absolutely excruciating.

I've also considered that. I just don't know any photo labs or even ave my own dark room... yet.

Is this the scratched up part?

So what do you guys think is wrong with my camera. Here's some of the "ghosting". Looks like another frame was superimposed on the left side. It also looks like I have dust on my lens.

Shutter issues?

Probably is broken / needs adjustment. Expensive and time-consuming, buy a "new", working body, it's cheaper.

Best advice your probably going to get im afraid.

Most film bodies can be bought fairly cheaply now days. What do you have at the moment?

I really don't want it to come down to getting a "new" body though I suppose they aren't that expensive. If not another A-1, maybe another FD mount body. Any suggestions for that though and what to look for? And how do you guys usually test old cameras?

I'm gonna waste a roll of 36 on this one testing out the different shutter speeds. Is it possible to overexpose one shot so much that light leaks out the sides and onto adjacent frames? The problem must be with the different shutter speeds cause some of these look clean.

It looks kinda like the camera is double exposing in some of the frames. Maybe the film advance is tripping the shutter up or something,\.

wherever you see a faint white line like that it's a biiiig fucking scratch that the scanner attempted to automatically remove
i find it's best to clonestamp & heal scratches/dust out, but you gotta scan your own film for that

Canon AE-1 or AE-1P are both respectively cheap and have a FD mount.

So how do you guys test out your old cameras? If I'm gonna use up a whole 36, what should I be testing with it? I'm thinking of setting it up on a tripod aimed at a good even scene that won't change then taking multiple shots at the same aperture but different shutter speeds. I'll also try advancing the film in complete darkness then once in regular light to see if that's where light leaks in. By the looks of it though, it seems that light leaks in from the sides to adjacent frames when taking a shot.

and btw, any way I can attach an FD mount lens on a digital SLR body?

FD can't be easily used on a DSLR, unless there's an adapter for 4/3rds. Don't bother.

bump, how should I test this camera?

I'm thinking the 16 different shutter speeds then f stops while advancing the film in darkness then about two shots with advancing it normally then trying a few while switching lenses. Any other things I should do?
>> ?????
bump, c'mon /p/, I know there are a few filmfags here that can answer me here>>172332

Yeah that's fine, just do it.

Never tried this, but perhaps you could take off the lens, hold the (empty) camera's shutter open with bulb, and then shine a penlight in while standing in a dark closet? Perhaps light leaks would show in the back (if any)

one of the reasons i chose a DSLR over a film one was because in my city, the closest thing we have to a professional photo lab are Kameraworld and Picture City.

Goddamn it.

Thanks for the idea! I tried it out and the only place light escaped was the viewfinder before I hit the shutter then there was no other light coming out after the mirror went up. Light came out again as I advanced but that's just cause the mirror went back down. So it's probably a lag in the shutter's 2nd curtain, a leak when I advance film, or the the back's pressure plate being too loose and allowing light to spill in the sides.
