Not sure what the minimum focus distance is on the canon or tokina, but the sigma is Very close, you never have to worry about being too close and not being able to get the subject in focus, and has a nice manual focus override that you can just turn, even after its autofocused.
The build quality on the sigma is quite good, But wide open you do lose a bit of contrast and sharpness as you get near the edges at 10mm. (that is on a nikon though, which is 15mm, Canon is 16mm with the 1.6x multiplier, so it is probably less)
