Pile of Portraits Anonymous
I got some pretty good critique last time from another anon, so here's another set just for more feedback.

All of them are Neopan 400 pushed to 1600 on Mamiya 1000s.

Her face looks very bumpy in this. Is that from the two-stops-pushed grain, or does she have really bad skin, or was it a makeup issue? Other than that, I really like it.

This was on purpose

I'm pretty sure she wasn't wearing make up. Besides, having a textured face != bad skin. Humans don't come naturally air-brushed.

That's all for now. So I'd like to get y'all advice on lighting composition, cropping, etc for this short set.

I need some more withering critique. Come on anon, I can take it.

To help me out here, you're going to qualify that statement.

What do you like about it? What makes it stunning for you?

not same poster but...
the way she's looking at the camera. its very frank in a way, i dont really know how to describe it. she has kind of a faint smile, but at the same time she's kind of ambivalent about the whole thing.
how do you take these shots? do you find people you think are interesting, and ask to take their picture?

AHAHA asking p for critique again?

What is it you don't like about the other ones?

is the only good one out of these. I appreciate you shooting on decent film, but your framing on all the other shots is pretty bland, and your DOF is sort of bland too. With the first shot, there's a lot of energy due to the high amount of contrast created by the light outline, and your DOF does a very good job of obscuring the background - really focusing on the subject. The only thing I don't really like at all about the first one is that giant white spot to the right. It doesn't create any useful movement at all and distracts the eye, since it is the brightest highlight in the picture.

When I look at your other pictures, where is my eye going? What am I focusing on with any real intensity? A lot of people on this board will like shot number 2 because it has a girl in it - but as someone who once touched a naked woman who was alive up until like 5 minutes before that moment, I'm not entranced by her.

Basically, learn to think about the photograph as a moving scene, and frame your subject appropriately. A portrait doesn't always have to be chest level and up. Play with it more!

P.S. Shoot some color for a while, it will be good for you.

>What am I focusing on with any real intensity?
>your framing ... is pretty bland, and your DOF is sort of bland too.

Yeah, I'm working on that. I'm guessing by bland you mean "simple" or "generic". How is a DOF bland? I shoot with a red filter during day time so that I can get some isolation, because I'd rather not shoot at f/16 all the time. I'm not sure I agree with you on the DOF. Do you need more or less?

>learn to think about the photograph as a moving scene,
That's funny, because I've been looking at Daido Moriyama's works and they have an incredible amount of energy, even though he's just capturing a slice of motion.

Shit. Thanks for your review. It was definitely helpful.
I thought this shot(pic related) was as generic as they come, but I'd like to get your thoughts on it. Sure she doesn't have a "ready for picture" face, because I didn't want it.

>Shoot some color for a while, it will be good for you.
What does color have to do with anything?

they are just blah for me, I liked>>290803because its something I don't see often, the textures and tones, the curves on her clothes, it feels harmonic for me.

Person you addressed. I'm a day late sorry. It's a combination of her expression and the composition. I feel like you really 'captured' her, so to speak, and I've always thought this is what a portrait photographer should strive for. When I look at the photo it's like I'm actually looking into her eyes as if she were standing in front of me.
