>>286466 Do you have any idea how hard it is to write software or how much work, time, and effort? Processors from Intel weigh only a few grams and are made of silicon, and some conductive alloys which are highly abundant in the world and they manufacture so much, the cost is distributed very thinly that it takes less than $50 to fabricate and ship a $1000 Quad Core. Why is it so expensive then? Because of all the engineers that worked on it. Software is expensive because of the development. Just because it's intangible doesn't mean it should be free.
What about the "Student Edition" of software? They can afford to give that discounted because the cost is offset by the "Professional Edition" they would also sell and I'm sure Professionals who earn a living on that software can easily make the money back after a project or two, much like professional gear. It's an application of the Pareto principle (wiki it). A majority off Adobe's income came from a small percentage of their customers, namely, the Professionals who use the Master Collection and the majority of their customers (student editions, PS Essentials) contribute a smaller percentage.
So stop thinking all software should be free as in beer.
