what does it take to be a war photographer?
what does it take to forever expose the defecation of a torn human body?
what does it take to walk through the killing fields, through the masses of bodies women, men, children, rebels, countrymen, and the innocent alike?
how much nerve must you have in your body alone to withstand the constant barrage of bullets and gun clatter?
how much force do you need to muster in order to cock that camera and press the shutter release?
what is it like to stare through the viewfinder of the object that builds your passion and see the most horrific acts possible?
whats it like when you see these acts and suddenly find the courage to show the world what really happens? what a lifeless body really looks like?
what is it like to be forever instilled with the thought that, maybe that lifeless body had a family? that body was a walking, talking, thinking human being who feared death just like anyone else but put his countrymen and beliefs before himself?
and then what is it like to have your work, your life, your passion turned down by every publisher from here to kingdom come because its to graphic and is far to serious for the general public?

I want to know.

I am now retired but I was an MP in Desert Storm. But I guess I wasn't a PHOTOGRAPHER so I can't talk. I was just a soldier protecting your whiney ass

Here's my advice. If you are young and all fired up and hoping to expose injustice then you are in the wrong field. If you want to tell a story then you are in the right field. You wont survive if you are out there every day trying to figure out what is right and wrong and ethical. If you just want to tell a story about what happens then you will do fine. Also realize that if you dont get along with military types you probably wont do too well especially if you are an embedded photo journalist. Just try to keep a level head and dont try to figure everything out. If you keep all that in mind you might do well as a war photojournalist.

Sometimes things go wrong or bad things happen. You've got to accept that.
