I have seen this happen. Cases where a lens would have survived if it wasn't for the filter glass being driven into the elements.
The best solution is not to be a clumsy oaf with expensive equipment. UV filters are not bullet proof armor. At best a good one will stop sand and crap, although sand is known to ruin all but the best of them with scratches too.
