What's a good lens for taking portraits? Nothing too expensive, but still decent.

pic somewhat related.

for film or digital... classic portrait length is around 80-120mm for film (so 50-80mm for digital), which is why the 50mm 1:1.8 is still great for digital as a fast portrait lens

Weird.. I came across this pic in a photo book today. Odd that it should be posted right after I saw it for the first time.

It gets posted a lot.

It used to be 50, 80~ and 135, but with 1.5 crop its more 24, 50 and 80~. The 135s are still fantastic (i am drooling over the 135 Sonnar G CZ) and the longer the lense the more flattering it is so they are fine if you can cope with being a fair bit away from your subject.

Also primes only, zooms sucks esp for portraits.

The 70-200 2.8 works well for weddings and similar events. A popular choice for that sort of thing. It's not bad at all.

If the OP is still using film then a 85mm 1.8 might be a good choice, depending on what you already have and what kind of pictures you like to take. It's hard to make this kind of decision for someone else, especially with little info to go on.
