OP's picture is fail and callous, but Jim Goldberg incorporates text into his prints. Pic related, the writing is from the housekeeper in the back, it's from a book of portraits called "Rich and Poor" where all the subjects wrote comments on the prints and that was duplicated in the book.

Text reads,

"My dream was to become a skool teacher. Mrs. Stone is rich. I have talents but not opportunity. I am used to standing behind Mrs. Stone. I have been a servant for 40 years."

Go look it up on Magnum's site. It's a great book, very shocking.

>treat people like human beings for god sakes.

Yeah, you too. Taking a generic, stereotypical photo of a panhandler and giving it a sarcastic caption. You're a real humanitarian.
>> Anonymous
actually its not sarcastic, its a lyric from a song about how the homeless are just ignorred and nobody does anything about it, they're too caught up in their own lives. bam.

so what is that man's name?

what did he tell you about why he was where he was? what did you learn from him before you took his photo and posted it online for everyone to mock and laugh at?

what was his name?
>> Anonymous
yeah im pretty poor
>> Anonymous
>>195158
sell some of your photos and see if that helps.
>> Anonymous
um i didnt tell anyone to mock or laugh at. its not very funny to me. its serious to me. ur the one who made that assumption

i cant remember his name cuz it was like a year ago but i can tell you he was a diabetic and he became homeless because of the medical bills. I talk to 95% of the people who are in my photographs. I love meeting people.
>> Anonymous
apparently my photos arent worth selling >_<

lyrics are Rise Against - Drones.

well good, but you are the one who took a photo and threw it online with no attribution or information about the subject.

he's a person, you know, and you might know and like him, but that's his picture, not yours.

morally anyway- the law says you can take his photo and do what the fuck ever you want with it,.

so you posted your shot on a forum where people have no regard for any common decency; even if you didn't think it would get a laugh, some sick fucks did laugh at it, and that's your fault.

be more careful, or at least be more aware, that what you see in a phtoto is not what other's see.

it's not "know your audience", it's 'know that you see what others do not.'

i'm glad you know him, and know your subjects-it adds to my store of faith, and subtracts from my pool of helpless cyncism.

wow i didnt expect you to go that deep. i guess there was some point to you heckling me. yeah 4chan wasnt the right place, but it was my first post one here, so i didnt kno what to expect really. my fault.

don't be sorry- you took at good shot, you did an art. I would have that shot and die happy, etc. just making that image was worth any endeavour, though Bresson may mumble in his grave, whatever, it's yours, and should be recognized. will it live forever? meh, probably not. did you try, and did that try show through, did the viewer see your wish? yes, and that is priceless.

just understand the moral weight of art- it's heavier than anything else.

shit, you could have replaced a sink today and done the best fucking sink replace ever seen, and it would be only be between you and the sink gods.

art happens between you and the viewer, and photography happens between you and the subject- maybe they don't want to meet.

what if you named that guy and then he goes to get a job in 5 years, and the fist thing they google up is "diabetic junkie homeless art guy?

anyway, bottom line is you did a good shot(not withstanding you murdering it in processing) and you need to let your viewers, and your subject, know more than you you thought happened. show them the truth, not your version.

Shooting homeless people like this is dull, generic and exploitative. You've not even managed to do it well. Sage.
