This should be common photographers knowledge. I've had to state my rights in public to civilians and police many times, because many of them are so ignorant.
The laws are a little better here in Canada, though. I have the right to do just about anything but sell images that contain somebody who has not given consent, take photographs of government property, and take pictures of people inside their own home/business. And of course tresspass. Any time somebody says otherwise to me, I gladly inform them I have the right.
Would suck having some twat smash your camera, but then you can just sue them for damages.
