Screen protector for D40? John
Dear /p/,

I bought a Nikon D40 on your advice. :)

I was worried to find that there is no protection for the LCD screen from scratches, fingerprints (and nose imprints hehe). What should I do to protect it? Do you guys use any screen protector... thing?

Thanks,
John

my cameras are good enough that they come bundled with screen protector. you can get those thin plastic things that you stick onto the screen, like the kind on palm pilots or whatever

>>96633

I'm not sure if this is the case for every camera out there but the plastic surface that you can actually touch IS the screen protector. The LCD is behind it.

On my Canon, I can get a genuine replacement from the factory for about 20$ or so if it ever gets scratched real bad.

However, as I want to avoid smudges from my nose or fingers, I bought a non-adhesive plastic film screen protector from Clarivue.

10$ for 2. Good stuff. It's nearly invisible unless you're looking at some extreme angles.
>> Anonymous
I don't worry about it. If smudges bother you, just wipe it with your lens cloth before you look at it.
>> John
I don't know if the display is a shield or the LCD itself.

Smudges can be wiped away, but scratches can't. Plus, they get progressively worse with time, so preventing them when the camera is new makes sense, I guess. I think I'll visit a camera shop and ask for that protective film. Thanks, /p/.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
wait don't they come with an LCD guard? like a big hunk of plastic that clicks on the LCD?

Or does the D40 not get one? since every other DSLR Nikon has put out gets one...

I dont use it anyway, i have a think strip of plastic that sticks on. Barely notice its there and it prevents scratches. They're probably the best thing. Though i don't even think i've scratched that.

If you are paranoid just get one of those plastic strips, don't pay more than 5 bucks for ti though, it's barely worth that as it is.

only the D80+ comes with one.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>96668

Nope. The D50 came with one, my D70s came with and the D200 came with one.

>>96682
well in that case they skimped even more on the D40 than i thought. i didnt know the D50 or D70 came with one since ive never seen one with one...then again i havent seen all that many of them anyway...lol.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>96685

Yeah i don't use it cause it's too chunky for me... the thin strip of protector i was much more happy with.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
D70 came with one, its BY FAR the most handiest accessory.
My protector is all scratched and damaged from the years i've had it, i'm glad its on the protector and not on the screen.

Get one of those screen protector plastic film thingies for cellphones and cut it to size, it will work fine.

>>96692

shit... i lost my eye cap... ahhh fuck. haha gonna have to get a new one from somewhere

If any marks or scratches appear I just lightly sand it back and then varnish it again to restore the smooth surface. Works wonderfully.
>> ????? !wAHA/GeRU.
My D70 came with one, my D80 came with one, but my D50 did not come with one. The D50's I've seen didn't come with one. I took it off my D70 when I got it and put a thin film protector on it thinking that was enough protection. I finally put it back on after a close call.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
When i bought my D70s (two years ago?) the D50 was the other option, had pretty much the exact same things in the box. Though the one i saw was a silver one... though i doubt that would have made that much of a difference.

Point is, i still prefer my thin piece of hard plastic.

I wish Canon had those hard screen protectors as standard. The one I've seen on my friend's D80 looks very handy.

if my would fit yours i'll send it to ya. i never use it anyway.

As others have said, the part at the back of the camera is just a clear plastic plate. The actual LCD itself is further inside the camera, behind the plastic part.

You can get a brand new replacement panel for just a few $$$ if yours is scratched. So I wouldn't even bother with it.

If you are anal about it though, just cover it with some clear tape, transparent plastic film, or clear shelf paper (which is not actually paper, despite its name). You can get this from any hobby shop. You don't have to go to a camara store.

>>96800

Oh well, that's not so bad then if I can order up a replacement as easy as that.
>> John
>>96800

Hi... I am lost reading the reply. Are you talking about the D40? :) If yes, can you show me a link where I can buy the back panel? I can't find it using Froogle; maybe I am not searching right.

I'm the one who posted>>96640

And I think BlackAdder is referring to my post. I know for sure Canon offers the plastic screen for replacement.

Look on DPReview and see in the forums if it's available for Nikons.

My D80 came with protector. It got lost in a week. I didn't buy another one.

Who uses the screen?
>> Anonymous
>>96973

Yes, I was talking about the D40.

Any "real" camera you can get spare parts for. That includes things like the knobs, switches, buttons, and all that stuff. The clear plastic panel on the back of the housing is just another spare part. You can get them from Canon directly or from a service center that repairs Canon cameras. You can buy every part of the camera individually, including that back panel. They aren't marketed to the average Joe becasue this is a part that almost nobody needs. But, they are available and they're not expensive.

Think of it like the auto dealership. You can go to the parts counter and buy a new alternator, or a new bumper, or a leaf spring. this is the same way. Any part on that camera you can buy new through Canon or through a Canon service center.

Wonder if there's a model for Canon. Yes, I know about the clear plastic panel but not having to replace it is better.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>97333

I completely agree with that, why anyone would prefer to get a substantial part of a camera replaced which takes unnecessary time than to just spend a few dollars on a preventative measure is beyond me.
>> Anonymous
>>97390

Because the genuine part is only a few dollars as well.

Because no one makes a screen like that for your particular camera.

Because someone might prefer a plastic film instead.

Because it's a clumsy thing to have on your camera.

You can go on.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>97393

dude... have you been reading what i've written?

I prefer the thin plastic strip, i think it's much better than the thing pictured in familyman's pic.

It's also cheaper than the genuine and costs a hell of a lot less to install, unless of course you want your warranty voided by Nikon.

Again, a preventative measure is better than replacing parts.

i like the covers that come with nikons. of course canon has their own covers that are built into the body, but it doesnt make a difference for me. its not "omg bulky" like some people make it out to be, and i also dont get the "wtf impaired view" and a lot better than scratching the lcd itself.
>> Anonymous
>>97395It's also cheaper than the genuine and costs a hell of a lot less to install

The genuine screen is 12$ and takes 5 minutes to install yourself. What the fuck.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
>>97395
i much prefer the plastic thingie thats featured in my pic.
thats 3 years worth of travel and bashing on that cover.
i never review my pics in much depth on the LCD screen so the scratches on it dont really hinder my experience, and if i do want to take a closer look, i can simply take off the plastic cover and its clear as day.
I much prefer that to be scratched than the screen itself.
>> Anonyfag of Borneo !bHymOqU5YY
>>97333
Uh oh, looks like I didn't make it clear enough.

I want a screen protector like Nikon's - I know that with Canon cameras it's sorta integrated. But I live in a place where the nearest Canon service centre is a plane trip away, which needless to say will take a lot of planning if I were to order that particular part from Canon.

Now I just use a strip of LCD protector over the built-in protector.

are we talking about the same thing?

$10 at B&H

>>97406

Unless you live in some third world country, Canon USA or Canada will ship it for 5$.
>> Anonymous
>>97395
i think putting on the thin plastic so it lines up and doesnt have bubbles may take longer than snapping on/off the hard covers that come with nikons.
>> Anonymous
>>97390

It's not a substantial part. It's a piece of plastic that costs about $5.

I'd much prefer to replace that rather than fool around with an exterior part.

Replacing the built-in "cover" is probably cheaper than an external cover. It can't fall off. It doesn't add an extra layer of distortion to the image. It also doesn't add any weight to the camera. And, you don't need to do anything UNLESS yours is already badly scratched up. If it is, just replace it. Problem solved, cheap and easy.

And just like 94709 said, you can get them mailed to you cheap and easy.
>> Anonymous
>>97452
theres no "fooling around" like you said, as can be seen in>>97408
having the cover built into the body is the same as having one outside.
god forbid the cover add 1 gram to the weight.
you can keep a nikon cover on all the time and not touch it unless its badly scratched.

basically: canon and nikon covers are the same. canon's cover is put into a recess in the body instead of being outside.
>> Anonymous
>>97453

There is indeed fooling around!
You have to make sure it doesn't fall off or get left behind. It's one more thing to clean--and you have to clean it, becasue if you don't then fine dirt can get caught between it and the back of the camera, scratching both very quickly. It's another layer of material and potenitally dirt between the LCD itself and your eye.

The only time when I would consider using one is if I had to take my camera in a rough enviornment where there's a chance that the camera could be getting knocked around. At that poit in time the extra mechanical strength of this kind of "guard" becomes desireable. But otherwise? It addresses a need that doesn't actually exist.
