Sure, why not, but it's a shit load of money to spend on a body. I'd recommend cheaper body and good lenses. Perhaps D60 + VR kit lens, then read, learn post work and shoot like crazy and after 6 months or so you start to see what other lenses you need. If you can't get good shots with lower end body then D300 isn't going to help you.
Cheaper bodies are perfectly capable for most things. Fast sports, birding etc. is the only area where their AF system and fps may fail you.
