So,I'm trying to figure out the best way to interpolate my 12MP images up to 78MP for printing at 24X36.

I've done comparisons between Blow Up, Genuine Fractals and PhotoZoom Pro2's S-Splice XL, with S-Splice XL coming out on top with "in-between soft and sharp photo" settings for this degree of interpolation. Has anyone else done this type of rather extreme interpolation?

Any thoughts on whether this is a complete waste of time and money, as to whether the output will be at all acceptable or what? The 12X18s are great, but of course this is equivalent to having four of them together from the same base data.

I guess I'll probably start doing my landscapes as panoramas when I intend to print large and have time. Seems worth it to achieve appropriate resolution without getting a scanning back system or large format.

78 Megapixels? You mean 18mp right? To get 36x24 at 150 PPI which is 5400x3600 px. It's not as if its going to be inspected with a magnifying glass.

I've always been under the impression that interpolation should be done to 300 ppi. Is this impression of mine wrong? Sure as hell would save a lot of processing time and space...

Good printing places have hardware / software that does the same thing effectively. 24x36 is also viewed from farther away than say an 8x12, So the 300dpi becomes less important aswell

Photoshops Bicubic resizer works well for me if I do need to blow it up a bit.

the quality of the photo has more to do with the max print size than the megapikles

use your 12mp at 200 dpi and print at 24x36

canvas is easymode for huge prints.

I really want to do a 60" panorama print from one photo, which on canvas would look awesome.

If you're getting the prints from someplace worth their salt, don't do anything to it. Their RIPs are going to work much better than your hamfisted dicking around.

truth

someone who is paid to do this type of thing 8 hrs a day will do a better job than someone doing it in their spare time

but that goes for any craft, like carpentry, tailoring, cooking, etc

I get sharp 20x30 prints from my D80 all the time.

Don't look at the damn thing too close and you'll be fine.

LOL. Fair enough. Perhaps view it on a friend's TV or the internet then. They are doing an extreme test. Prints the size of houses.
