<--This is my effort, I couldn't get it in focus fast enough.

Not a pro but I am guessing you focus on something else at the same distance (Flower perhaps). You could also do bracketed shots where you pick a different focus for each shot taken in the sequence.

continuous shutter, and just wait for it to get in focus. big dof.

Rapid manual focus bracketing takes skill, and I know of only one DSLR with automatic focus bracketing D:

I tried the focusing on something else technique, it didn't work because the DoF is so shallow thatit would have to be at the perfect distance.

>>204136
How can i get a wide DoF whilst still maintaining a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the fly?
>> Anonymous
DOF related to aperture size ,independent to shutter speed
>> Anonymous
>>204145
Yeah, but if I stop the aperture down to say f/11 my shutter speed is going to have to be longer.
>> Anonymous
>>204145
He refers to the fact that you need a slower shutter speed to compensate for the narrower aperture.
>> Anonymous
how about increasing the ISO to change the shutter speed?
>> Anonymous
>>204154
I could do that, but I was already on 400 and I hate to go above that.

>>204148

why on earth would you want to do that. you NEED shallow DOF for flying insects or theyll be lost in the background
>> Anonymous
>>204156
I agree. I was just explaining why i'd have difficulty doing that anyway.

Using flash can help a lot if you haven't tried it. That will give you more options.

Noise. It doesnt really solve my problem anyway. It just allows me a smaller aperture, which gives me greater DoF which I don't really want. For this reason>>204156

I currently don't have a flash. I've been meaning to buy one for ages, thanks for reminding me.

i re-read your problem and retracted my statement 204161

maybe trying to catch the insect while it is taking off, allowing for easier focus.
heres a link i found while browsing

You'll love having one. It's a great bit of kit to expand to and a tool you'll appreciate time and again once you start learning it. If you don't want to get a macro flash, then you can mount the more normal flash heads in ways to suit fiddly close-up macros too.

Have a good browse around the shops and think of your own needs and expenses.

Flash will let you freeze movement that you can't really do any other way and let you get more DOF for macros where light is at a premium. You'll see a lot of photos where it was the flash burst that does the freezing of movement, rather than the shutter speed.

With something like hoverflies or regularly visited flowers you can pick a point of focus and just wait. Perhaps use a tripod too to hold it there. Once they come into view you can rattle off a few shots as needed.
