If you expect some useful advice on 4chan after posting this, you're in for a big disappointment.

If I'd posted on /b/, maybe. But I always thought /p/ was more civilized.

Just post some good photography books.

I've never been able to find any good ones besides "The Photo Book".

So is /tg/ _really_ the only helpful board on 4chon? I'd go ask them, but I doubt any of those worthless fat fucks has ever strayed far enough from its basement to know anything about photography.

'Magnum Magnum'

'Through the Lens: National Geographic's Greatest Photographs'

Both on Amazon. Dunno if that helps, I've only browsed through those two quickly, and they both looked quite good.

Phaidon's ABC of photography is a good book.

Taschen's small collections (they have about almost any important photographer, Rober Doisneau, etc)

Igor Kostin's book about Chernobyl is quite good too. There are hundreds more, and at work we have even more. Just go to a big bookstore and look.

BTW, pic is your niece?

"Cuba" and "Divided Soul" by David Alan Harvey
"The Americans" by Robert Frank
"Inferno" by James Nachtwey, although her parents may or may not want her having it... basically the worst events of the last twenty years graphically depicted all in one brilliant book. Wars, famines, genocides, etc. But if the parents would be fine with it, there's no photographer more talented than Nachtwey alive today.
"The Americans" by Robert Frank.
"Gypsies" and "The Black Triangle" by Josef Koudelka.

I'll post more later, and some links. It's 07:09 where I am and I've been up all night.

You should also know, though, OP, that much of this work is also available online. One of the best and most important photography books- "The Decisive Moment" by Henri Cartier-Bresson- hasn't been printed in decades and the books of it are expensive collectibles.

You listed 'The Americans' twice...

though it's probably because it's that good.

In terms with the niece, what kind of photography would she want to get into? I mean if she perfers Annie L's studio portraits no ral point buying her documentary photographers...

or maybe i'm plain wrong.

If she's into studio photography, buy her subscription to Vogue Italia. Some of the best shit out there.

Thanks for your help, /p/.

She takes odd pictures of whatever takes her interest. She's a real shutterbug. I'll get her The Americans, because it's the kind of stuff she takes herself.

probably cause the mods and janitors are fags who delete 'snapshots' or whatever. Don't worry too much about it.

Robert Frank's American's will be a great gift. Anything by William Klein is good too.

-Magnum's 9/11 book (title escapes me), although it's a bit jingoistic for me at times
-"Parisians" by Peter Turnley
-any/all of Annie Leibowitz's books
-"Life: 100 Photographs That Changed the World"

The motherfucking CAMERA,
The goddamn NEGATIVE,
The sodding PRINT - AA

I may have gotten those last three titles wrong, but they're important books. ^_^

I would love to be one, the potential money making... wow...

but i like to keep my soul intact

It's a tough choice, all right. Me, I think my soul is worth a lot less than paparazzo pay right now. I mean, fuck, think of all the camera shit you can buy!

ahahahahahaha it'd be funny if I didn't spend food money on lenses *sob*

Yeah tell me about it :D

I worked briefly in the TV industry, there was a rumour that a certain star in Aus had a photo snapped of them kissing another star... the problem was those two were married to other people.

The photographer phoned the TV channel first who reportedly bought the photos for a 6 figure sum rather than let them try and bid them to a tabloid magazine.

Friends were are up and comers have joked that we try something similar and split the money :D
