none, D300 will be the best camera at that price point until canon releases something similar.

if thats true, do you think i should wait for Canons version.
The only reason I say this is because I heard Nikon sensors suck, and they often raise color temperature and ruin your white balance.
I was thinking about getting the D300 first but after hearing that I'm not sure.

jesus christ. if you're basing your judgment off a totally unsubstantiated argument circulated by some bullshit artist on some nothing forum, you don't need to spend 1800 bucks on a camera.

well, we dont know if canon plans on releasing something similar or if they do, when. i am a nikon user so ive looked into it, and it is one of the best, if it the best performance/price ratio camera that will be on the market. D300 is pretty much the perfect jump for me, relatively affordable and from the reviews from people who got to preview it, it is basically a pro body for a prosumer price. white balance is one of the easier things to fix anyway, but it is inconvenient. the D300 will have custom whitebalance where you can fine tune the temp iirc, so that should be resolved. also, the new AF system is amazing from all the things ive read from people who got to hold one.

the 40D is right up there with it for the most part but the D300 will have 194834 more AF points and whatever.

op here, thanks, i think you swayed me towards Nikon with your post, one of the things I was really hoping to hear was that you get to fine tune color temp, and you confirmed it.

Nikon uses censors made by other companies (Sony)that are generally worse so i think it was right of me to make that assumption.

no, it was pretty wrong. sony makes super-innovative million dollar sensors for broadcast cameras, so does canon. they're both triple-A top tier imaging companies. consumers like you and me can't tell the difference (and you can't even spell sensor right) so why worry?

nikon makes top-notch professional quality cameras, canon makes top-notch professional quality cameras. that's all you need to know.

the new lcd screen on the nikon is near orgasm inspiring too apparently.

oh ok sorry about that, "super-innovative" is all i need to know.

Canon probably won't.

The D300 is a pretty unique thing, even compared to Nikon's old offerings. Its feature set- way too many AF points, weatherproofing, a top-notch full coverage viewfinder- all scream "professional camera," but it's actually in a reasonable, consumer-like body.

I think what Nikon actually did was scrap the "prosumer" category from its line, and make two professional cameras: the D300 for people who want crop sensors and the D3 for people who want full-frame. I was excited about the D3's ability to switch between DX and FX, but strangely, the DX mode is less than six megapixels. A simple division by 1.5 would suggest that it would be around eight, which would be perfect; it seems the DX mode is pretty much another otherwise of limited use tip of the hat to sports photographers who need lots of small images of stuff far away.

well there are a couple of things to consider:
- the Nikon D300 is NOT available. you can order one today and I will be surprised if you get it some point next year. Forget about seing them at your local camera dealer.
- The Canon 40D you can get fairly easily at a cheaper price (the difference in price will cover 1 nice lens).
- The Nikon D300 is SUPERIOR to the Canon 40D and anyone saying otherwise is just a Canon fanboy that is not able to be objective.
- Canon will eventually release a camera that is better than the D300, and at a competetive price. However, they just released a top model, and the 40D so I can't see any reason they would release something else all of a sudden - it will really annoy everybody who invested good money in the 40D.

from what ive seen, the d300 is quite a good jump up from the d200, rivaling the d2x(s). i think this is the camera many nikon users have been waiting for. in a month's time we will see how much of the hype it lives up to, but from the preproduction models it looks quite promising.i plan on getting one eventually. currently in school and such so dont quite have the funds, but theyre probably already preordered for several months anyway

Canon will probably make a successor to the 5D sometime soon, but I highly doubt it will be directly comparable to the D300.

Also, there's the Olympus E-3, which is supposedly going to have most of D300's major features at a lower price, but evidently with many drawbacks.

There's rumblings about a Canon 7D, but that would definitely fall in between the 40D feature set and the 1DMkII feature set. Best guess it'd be a full frame, higher fps update to the 5D, but far more expensive than the D300.

The Nikon line has been famous for slotting in between what the lines Canon are offering, and the D300 slots nicely between the 40D and 1DMkII (right now). So for this amount of features and at this price, this is the best out there at the moment. And remember, D200's were more expensive than the 30D's, and less expensive than the 5D's, and sold a metric fuckton.

As it currently stands, the D300 will continue that tradition, while bringing pro level feature set (51 AF points, high fps, tough body), much ballyhooed consumer level feature set (live view from the 40D, which can't even do it right, and sensor cleaning and such) to the proponents of the DX line of lenses.

The ridiculously highly detailed lcd and hdmi output couldn't hurt either. The one thing I'm jealous of the 40D is the wireless transmitter grip. Man that's sexy.

" The one thing I'm jealous of the 40D is the wireless transmitter grip. Man that's sexy."
ehm, there is a new wireless transmitter grip for the D3 and D300. just as sexy as the 40D.
In my opinion it's a scam. my PDA has wireless connectivity, its a tiny chip that weighs absolutely nothing and they could have shoved it in the body instead of selling it as an accessory that takes the place of your battery grip. it would make the manufacturing price maybe 1$ higher. MAYBE but probably less.
about the Canon 7D, it will probably be double the price of the Nikon D300, just guessing here.
And if you keep waiting for un-announced models, I heard rumblings about a Nikon D30 - full frame sensor in a compact (D300 size) body. Now that would be sweet for people that like or need very wide angles. It would probably be a good competition to the 7D.

From a neutral standpoint, I think its great we see this level of competition between Canon and Nikon. It's great for us consumers and keeps everyone on their toes.

You can argue about the pros and cons of each range and model, but I think now it'd be hard to say that any had a "bad" camera. Even the Canon Rebel cameras can make great pictures with the right user.

It is definitely good for the consumer, but the endless drivel it produces (from both sides' fanboys) drives me sick.

Eh, you're getting a lot more amplification, both ways, of the signal and it'll run for a lot longer than a PDA with its wireless on.

It's a really silly thing for anyone who isn't shooting live events or sports for a newsfeed, though. I can't think of anyone else who needs to have photos sent instantly as-shot.

I have to agree. The fanboys on all sides and the bickering is stupid. It's just a tool, not a religion. Just because someone says they like a brand that you don't happen to be using doesn't mean they just punched your mom and insulted your wife.

I don't care what brand it is if it does the job. Pros shouldn't get sentimental either as they switch to whatever suits them best and that's a good example for the rest of us to follow.

Some people take it way, way too personally.

Oh no shit? That'd be awesome. Now I can wirelessly 'tether' the camera to a laptop.

I just hope there's no D30 though. I'd hate it because I like how all Nikon's stuff are well defined to their respective groups. For pro, D1, D2 or D3, for prosumers D100, D200 and D300, and D50, D70 and D80 for their consumer lines. And the fact that Nikon will definitely release lenses for either FX or DX flavour would just greatly confuse their users on which lenses to get. I mean I know I hated asking the question "Do I stay with DX or go for FX lenses in case I might upgrade in the future?"

You don't want a small affordable full frame sensor Nikon camera?

OH MAN I would looooove one, Give me an ISO 6400 as clean as the D3 shots I've seen and I will buy it in a heartbeat!
>> Anonymous
>>82053
Well do want really. Only my 17-55 would be in crop mode all the time, and if 5mp images bother me too damn much, I'd prolly sell it off to get some other focal length, 24-70mm f/2.8, and just get a 14-24 just to dick around with my 5D 16mm wielding friend.

But the fact that it segments off the great DX optics from the FX cameras is just a tad sad IMO. Coz man I love my 17-55.

It doesn't. I gotta give nikon props for having a DX/crop mode. I'm sure this'll be standard fare for every future full-frame body released in the foreseeable future.

Yeah i agree, and currently and for the foreseeable future 'Affordable Full Frame' will be nothing more than an oxymoron.

Whilst it'd be nice to have, the simple fact is that DX sensors will ALWAYS be cheaper than FX sensors. So there will always be a market for both, and honestly, as much as peple moan about 'oh i want FF' how many of you are actually going to actually fork out the money for it unless you gain some sort of income from the result or you just have enough money to throw at it.

hmmm sounds like the problem is more on your end. Nikon and Canon have both made a commitment to 35mm Equiv and APS-C sensors.

The confusion is only there because YOU don't know what YOU need. Any photographer who knows exactly what his or her needs are won't have that problem.

Continued...

Me? I want the D3 with 35mm focal length lens, because i LOVE landscape and i love shooting nighttime. Currently I have the D70s with only ONE 35mm lens, the 50mm 1.4D and the 17-55mm Nikkor for my paid work and the 18-200mm VR cause i'm an idiot :D.

But the D3 is more for the PJ so i'll wait for the megapixel monster that's coming if we follow nikon trends (D2h for the PJ then D2x).

In the intrim i'll probably buy the D300 as the specs are awesome, especially for High ISO performance which was the ONLY thing that i begrudged not going to Canon.

Then in a years time or however long it takes for the follow up to the D3 comes out i will either keep the D300 with the DX lenses as they're more than enough for events/club nights/weddings... or i could sell them off so i can add that fund to the D3 follow up knowing full well that the DX format is still alive and well so that the prices i can sell the DX gear for won't be a huge beating from what i paid for.
