Camera noob here. I have a sony cybershot DSC p200 if that means anything. Anyway, when Im taking pictures at night, with the camera on Auto mode, all the pictures come out TONS darker than what I see with my eyes. Is this a limitation of the camera, or should I just read the damn manual and learn to take night time pictures better?

first, RTFM. Next, read up on how to take lowlight photos. You'll have to go into manual mode to get a decent night shot.

TFM is your friend.

Your eyes are a lot more sensitive to light than a camera's sensor, and they have the nice ability to fiddle with their settings automatically to give you an extremely wide dynamic range.

Basically, to take a good night shot, you need to have a longer exposure because there's not much light. R the proverbial FM as to how one does that.

Im guessing Ill need a nice, portable tripod in that case...

you basically always need a tripod for night photography because of the long exposure times youll need to achieve anything good. you can also help out by using a faster (higher) iso but that will add graininess and noise to the picture, but on the flipside you can use a faster shutter speed or smaller aperture (higher f number).

can anyone link me a cheap, compact tripod? Ideally something that can fit nicely in my backpack, but I can just keep it stashed somewhere else if need be
