sony alpha, its really good cause its sony and you get to use not only sony but minolta lenses as well so you get twice the photography power.

Hasselblads with digital backs:

1. Cost more than most cars.
2. Are specialized for landscape and studio portraiture, and are great for those, but have some big disadvantages for other types of photography.

In response to your question, tell us your price range.

Under a thousand for starters.

And what sort of photography do you want to do?

This is important, because different types require different lenses and other equipment.

And you say you're "looking to get started in *digital* photography." Do you do film photography at all, and have lenses sitting around from that?

Picture somewhat related.

I cut my teeth with one of those old school Pentax SLR, it only had one lens so I had to make do with that. I learned how to develop film in a darkroom, etc. I did mostly stills with the Pentax so I have a mostly functioning tripod.

I want to do landscapes and portraits and then move on.

don't get a sony alpha, its really bad cause its sony and you get to use not only sony but minolta lenses as well so you get shitty support from sony and from minolta who dropped their whole line.

If you like the results that lens gives you, definitely buy a Pentax DSLR, unless you dislike the operation of it for some reason. The K100D is (I believe) the cheapest DSLR you could get new, and is very good; The K10D can be had for under a thousand, and is wonderful.

It's really a matter of which camera and camera system one likes to work with the best- all of them will make pretty much equally good pictures.

OP, listen to this man. But then again, it's just only one lens that you have, so you could go into any system really.

I use the Sony Alpha-100, and I'm not telling you what to get or not, just my experience. The A100 often has complaints about noise above 400 ISO, but will take good pictures regardless (Noise Ninja or Neat Image). Sony lenses are based on the Minolta Maxxum/Dynax AF lenses, so there is plenty of used lenses on the market, and more coming from people jumping to other cameras. I've not checked on prices from Nikon/Canon, but fast lenses can be expensive (35 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.4 @ ~$1300 brand new)

Built-in image stability is also a plus, but if you want to focus solely on studio work (lots of lights) or landscapes (tripod and too much free time), Image stability isn't going to help you.

tl;dr: I use an A-100. I know everything wrong with it.

I use an A100 too, it works fine and since i do a lot of low light photography onboard image stab is awesome and very effective. Minolta Dynax lenses are still quite cheap so you can get a beautiful prime for nothing.

Noise at ISO800 is still useable, not at 1600 unless your shooting for b&w.

The A700 is fucking win however.

meh, below average DSLR. Doesn't even have a top LCD readout. Only thing it has going for it is the wide range of lenses and some "innovative" dust removal system. Pass

buy an xti (they are getting dirt cheap now and they have really high quality) without the kit lens and then look at other lenses depending on what you like to take pics of.
