My point is there are many people out there who take pictures, many who might even be extremely good photographers, who don't give a shit about you, your "moves," and your camera at a party. There are also a lot of people who really know what they're doing behind the lens but still have some funny ideas about equipment. Equally naieve are the people who think that medium format is the only serious format and those who think their cheap DSLR is the be-all end-all of cameras. Photography school is mostly about learning the daily business of photography, how to set up lighting, how to develop your eye, and not about what equipment the general consensus of interweb nerds has decided everybody should own.
Art students are pretentious, there's no doubt about that. But at least they're doing something they enjoy, which is more than can be said about the 90% of people who major in business or political science so they can make lots of money, buy a big cookie-cutter house in the suburbs, and be "successful."
