Pic unrelated to comment but kinda spiffy anyway ^^;

is it me or is this rape of the worst kind? All the Hoya lenses I've seen are guttershite.
Would this takeover be a -factor to Pentax's reputation?

And also, while I'm posting, and as a pretty new DSLR 'grapher, help me decide between the 'Rebel XTI and Nikon's D40x. And don't say Pentax K100D, I've handled and I no like. >(

Have you handled the XTi and the D40x? If so, go with whichever one you liked more. Most of their big specs are pretty much identical, and each's slight advantages are counterbalanced by a slight advantage on the other side. So it pretty much comes down to which one you feel more subjectively comfortable with.

that's where it hits the fan - I've handled both but I wasn't allowed to take it out of the shop, and couldn't see how things would turn out in Photoshop etc - Really all Jessops [UK shop, overpriced but good for a tester] did was let me hold it, and basically make jargon-filled statements about how it did this or that. I understand most of what you need to know about digital cameras and they were talking crap. So really I might as well say no, I haven't had a hold. the Rebel was heavier but had a lot more gear available for it, and the D40x seemed lighter but otherwise I couldn't tell any different apart from it being easier to hold [the rebel having a slightly smaller body].
To round it off, they wouldn't let me test with anything but the standard 18-55mm lens. So I couldn't tell if the quality degraded to any dissatisfactory level at higher zoom levels, etc.
All in all not a good start; if anything I'm more confused by DPReview not really telling me much but stats.
So yeah, I was really asking humbly for any user reviews or thoughts more than a redirect to DPR.

Fair enough.

Me, I'm a Canon fanboy. I've had a Digital Rebel XTi for about a year now and I love it. I personally didn't much care for the interface on the D40 when I tried it out, but when I say "tried it out" I mean "poked at it for about 30 seconds in the Best Buy after having owned the Rebel for several months".

The main things that make me glad I went with the XTi instead of waiting for the D40 to appear are:
1. Autofocuses with all of Canon's lenses.
Now, granted, it can *use* pretty much all Nikon lenses, including old manual-focus-only ones. However, it will only autofocus with newer AF-I and AF-S lenses (as I recall. Again, I'm not a Nikon user, so those lens designations are from fuzzy memory). This wouldn't be so bad except that I've read that the fastest AF-I/AF-S lens is only f/2.8, and that's weak sauce.

(If I'm wrong, I'm sure a Nikon fanboy will chime in and correct me)
2. It's marginally faster. Only like 3fps vs 2.6fps, but when I tried it out in the store, I really felt that 4 tenths of a second. I'm sure if I'd never picked up an XTi, I wouldn't notice it.

Additionally, I just did some Due Dilligence and it turns out that the D40x you're looking at brings that speed up to 3fps just like the XTi. So that doesn't even matter.

I'm not a nikon fanboy, but I did just pick up a d40 with the 18-55 and the 55-200 vr. I love the 55-200, and the camera works just fine at the higher end.
Besides the complaint about the limited lenses, the main concern in terms of handling is that a number of functions like iso and white balance don't have dedicated buttons, but take one button to open a menu, then you access each function. I find it fast enough, since I don't usually have to change those very often, but that's more personal preference. I find the viewfinder to be bright, clear, and the information is laid out fine. It only has three autofocus points, but it's nice and accurate. It also focuses fast and quiet, and the shutter doesn't make that much noise, if that's important to you. And again, this all applies to the d40x, from what I've read.

I bought a K110D, I like it and it works for me

Just buy what feels right, don't worry about the Hoya takeover, Hoya isn't stupid enough to ruin a growing reputable profitable camera business.

But I guess you already narrowed it down away from the Pentax cameras so I have no idea why you even mentioned it.
