i have received a canon t90 for my school photo class
im am learning about it but there is one point that confuses me.
it has an AV setting on the screen and the numbers coincide with the aperture settings on the lens itself. are they the same thing? will anything bad happen if they are different when i take a picture?
do they have to match? does it matter?

I can't claim to be an expert on older AF Canons, but if it's like every other electronic camera I've ever worked with, which it almost certainly is, you control the aperture from the camera, not the lens. Set the lens's aperture ring to the smallest stop (probably f/16 or f/22), and then set it on your camera's display.
