If the switch on the lens is set to AF then it may damage the lens if it is not designed to be used that way. Some lenses (the better quality ones) allow the user to adjust focus manually without taking it off of AF mode. Full time manual focusing, etc. So you could AF, hold down the shutter button just to lock that focus and then tweak it to your preference with manual adjustment. All without changing a switch.
Do that with a lens not designed for it and it may cause problems.
