Any suggestions?
it needs to be fairly easy for the gf to learn on
and my last slr was a minolta xg1 so i need to catch up

I figured the d40x because if we want better we wont loose much in the upgrade

but they seem almost the same

Pro tip: You're already thinking about selling it. Just wait and save to buy something better.

D40>D40x
D40x has moar megapickles but the D40 has the fastest flash sync, 1/500 compared to D40x 1/200 which makes a big difference

the d40 has a base ISO of 200

1/500 sync at ISO 200 is the same as 1/250 sync at ISO 100

I don't think you understand how a faster flash sync becomes usefull. It usually involves a lack of flash power needed to expose in trying conditions. Lowering the ISO is the same as increasing the aperture. Aka, less sensitive to light.
