How badly do you despise professional photographers and students in photography, /p/ ?

They just piss me off. Just because they have some "BA in photography" they think their photographs are so awesome, whereas 95% of what they do is just dull.

Photographers, and "artists" in general, are just overrated.

Nowhere near as much as I despise people who come here and whine that other people are more successful in photography than they are rather than going out and taking some fucking pictures.

so, what you're saying is, you ran into some photo majors at a party or at a friend's house, you mentioned that you shoot photos too. you pulled out your rebel xti to prove it. they explained that digital is for amateurs, and that they only shoot medium format. you chuckled and agreed, then pulled up some images on your xti to show them "your moves" as it were. they replied, simply and tersely, "you should consider taking some photo classes."

right?

And anyone who's a format snob is simply unsufferable.

As an engineering student, i despise all art based students automatically.

However as an engineering student this is infact the correct course of action as they are all worthless idiots who do no work and complain about it.

Digital may not be for amateurs, but an xti sure as hell is.

>>171788you should consider taking some photo classes.
Maybe you should

My point is there are many people out there who take pictures, many who might even be extremely good photographers, who don't give a shit about you, your "moves," and your camera at a party. There are also a lot of people who really know what they're doing behind the lens but still have some funny ideas about equipment. Equally naieve are the people who think that medium format is the only serious format and those who think their cheap DSLR is the be-all end-all of cameras. Photography school is mostly about learning the daily business of photography, how to set up lighting, how to develop your eye, and not about what equipment the general consensus of interweb nerds has decided everybody should own.

Art students are pretentious, there's no doubt about that. But at least they're doing something they enjoy, which is more than can be said about the 90% of people who major in business or political science so they can make lots of money, buy a big cookie-cutter house in the suburbs, and be "successful."

Overheard at uni:

In the middle of quad a bunch of day care toddlers are being lead around, all holding onto a rope.

Guy to his girlfriend, gesturing towards the kids: "Arts students."

ITT Arts Students Suck
/bitter science student-near-grad who could make more money doing something unrelated to education straight out of high school than he will with his degree. Seriously, wtf. And 8-year! post-docs mean there's no way in hell I'll go for that. So..um...off to technical school? In any case, fucking arts students. Soo much crazy in there...

I hate faggots with shitzooms that don't know shit about art, tech or either taking good photos.

otherwise I'm pretty jealous of people that could dedicated a few years to photography studies. after achieving my bachelor degree in electronics/informatics, my parents didn't allow me to study photography.

partially because my father also did photo studies, and knows how hard it is to make your money (unless you do shit jobs).

Art student here.

Going to school for photography fucking rules. My dad makes a comfortable living so he has no problem spending $30k or so a year on me doing what I want to do in school even if it means I may not do it for a living. I started out doing painting in school for a year and a half and did really well with it but I got bored of the way it was being taught so I switched to photo. Now I go to school and play with equipment and learn things you jealousfags only wish you could all the while having hot photogeek chicks swoon because I rock in all of my classes.

Once I get my degree I'll probably become a firefighter and make upper middle class salary like the rest of you while only actually working 3 days a week and pursuing my photography and painting the rest of the time.

Economics Major reporting in. Work 32.5 hour weeks at a bank which gives me tons of time to take pictures. and Always a 2 day weekend. Pay is marginally better than anything else around here, and affords me about 5000$ worth of camera gear a year. (Assuming I save next to nothing)

Once I graduate (in 1 yr) I'll pick up a higher paying cushy bank job or return to graduate school to go to work for the Bank of Canada. Overall Photography is nowhere on the radar for a career, however I can be an obsessive hobbyist and sell some stuff on the side anyway.

tl;dr, Short work weeks FTW, Economics Major's FTW

I bought a Canon IXUS to allow my fiance to send me porn. I then bought a good DSLR for her as she had an interest in Photography. But she got bored with it. Might sell it soon. After all those porn shots, I bought a better camera for around $2K which had a good zoom, good glass and excellent macro ability ... but still a compact digital. I didn't like the idea of all those interchangeable lenses so I bought an all-in-one. No DSLR for me.

That camera was pretty darned useful... I sold some pictures to the son of Jacques Costeau for publication, and to the Guinness Book Or Records (2007). Other pics I took were used to create the backgrounds and textures for movies like 300, Happy Feet and Matrix etc. I now enjoy photography as a semi-pro hobby and my employer made tens of millions of dollars from the pictures I took and used. The end result is that I've made just shy of a million dollars myself with one camera and I've never taken a class. People come to me for advice & I now lecture occasionally as a guest speaker at the university where I was not originally qualified to attend when I left school... even Canon talks to me about their cameras and upcoming projects.

So a BA in photography means nothing to me. The world is digital now and a good pro has a keen eye for lighting.

But I am also an artist in the literal sense so you can just go fuck yourself over that comment, OP.

(see pic of my shitty camera).

well you're kinda right and kinda wrong.
most of the professional photographers are old.
therefore they mostly work in documentery style.

and that's why you call their work dull, because it's not creative (monochrome 'old guy' photos, 'poor kid' photos etc).

if you are in school that's another story, if you have a weak character and an old teacher, you'll get your mind posioned, calling anything correctly exposed 'nice'. if someone famous manages to make a correct exposure that'd be "magnum opus / masterpiece' ofcourse.

that's what you don't know.

what you know is probably experimental photography is way better, and is what you like.
>> else !L6xabslN96
i study multimedia. which is an abomination of a mix between design and computer science. we get shunned by engineers and nerds alike for being too "artsy", then looked down upon by the artags for producing "inferior work".
