Canon Powershot A710 IS Anonymous
Did I make a decent choice, /p/? I really don't have the funds for a DSLR at the moment, so was this a good substitute?

if you want a dslr and dont have the money for one right now, the correct choice would have been to save up the money to buy a (used) entry level one. or save up a bit longer and get a higher level one.

Yeah, it's a good choice. Canon's compacts are good cameras, and IS is win. If you start really getting into photography, though, you're probably going to want to upgrade to a dSLR depressingly rapidly. I know I did.

persoanlly i'm waiting to be severely limited by my S3 IS's capabilities before i upgrade to a dslr. i want to make the step from noob to photog with a crappy camera to photog with a great camera to master photog with a great camera. i don't think it's such a good idea to keep buying equipment as your skill level changes.

Yeah, thats how I looked at it when I considered buying one. I figured it was a nice alternative to a DSLR, and it does have some manual features on the camera itself. Of course, it's not as quick and on-the-fly as a DSLR. I myself have never used a DSLR but I have used a regular SLR, I imagine there isn't TOO much of a difference besides the whole digital factor.
