I think a 50d would be better than a 5d mk1. Better high ISO, better FPS, better screen (for what its worth) weather sealing etc.
in crampdish quaters (ie in a normal house room you struggle to get more than just the head in the frame.) you may find the 85mm pretty long for portrait work, but combined with a 50 1.4 (if your getting shit for lasting a long time this is a better, sharper option than the 1.8, especially if your not paying for it) it would be great and I don't see any of that gear limiting you in the future, apart from maybe a wide for the odd landscape.
