I was looking for a tripod a while back, and the limited range of options - oh sure, there's lots of brands but they're all basically the same thing - led me towards looking at monopods.
There was the idea though, "What if I need to have the monopod hold the camera by itself for a moment?"
So I started looking at monopod-tripods, but they don't look much less cumbersome than tripods.
I've actually come up with my own design for a monopod-tripod that, when "folded up", looks like nothing more than an ornate walking cane. The centre unscrews and extends up, locking with a screwing motion. The top unscrews to reveal the 1/4 mount, and umbrella mount - explain in a moment.
The legs, for tripod duty, fold out from the main body. They're thin in design, but made of stainless steel, and extend out independently so uneven ground is not a problem. All the actual weight is held on the centre pole that the legs fold out from anyway, so it should be able to hold a considerable weight.
The centre extension grows long enough to reach just over 180 centimetres in height, and with the placement of the tripod legs fully unfolded and extended, should make quite a serviceable umbrella - with additional spike screwed into bottom and removable triangular weather shield held on top.
As soon as I can get access to a small workshop with a lathe, mill, and drill press, I'll be making it and publishing all the info online.
Any /p/'ers got a machine shop?
