Here's a quick question. Does metering matter in manual mode? Why? You set your own aperture/shutter speed anyway, right?

you can use the meter to, well, meter the light.

doesn't matter if you use it or not, it's personal preference.

i can guess the settings of the camera, but it's easier to use the meter.

basically, you don't use metering in manual mode? that's what confuses me, because even if I fiddle with the metering modes, I see no changes.

If you're using the Zone System, for example, you can point the spot meter area in your viewfinder at a desired place in the scene and then set exactly what exposure you want at that place by adjusting your shutter speed and aperture in manual mode. Metering and manual mode are independent of each other, but when you use them together properly, you get good exposures.
