I'm buying a Nikon D80 tomorrow, and I need a good standard lens. I can't decide between the Nikkor 35mm f2, or the Sigma 30mm f1.4.

There's about a $20 difference between them here (Perth, Australia).

Please, /p/, help me out of this agonising impasse!

I think the Sigma lens would be better. But check out some of the info on it first.

I too considered these two lenses. In the end I picked Sigma - it's faster, it's closer to normal, it has HSM, it looks great.

If you don't need the extra .4 stops, the Sigma 28/1.8 [huge string of letters] mm prime is a sharper lens.

Sharper when both are wide open maybe, but not sharper when both are at f1.8.

I have the sigma 24mm f1.8, and it is amazing especially at f2.5+, But I just bought the Sigma 30mm f1.4 because that extra 2/3rds of a stop of light it lets in is needed! (Also its smaller, and flares much less)

I may be too late, but...

I have the Nikon 35mm f/2 and I love it. It's sharp wide open but the contrast could be better.

Stopped down it's extremely good.
