Sup /p/
I've been taking pictures with a Minolta from the 70's or 80's. It worked fine until it fell about 10 feet onto some concrete. So now I'm out a camera and need a new one.
I haven't bought a camera in my life, I've always used what I can get my hands on, mostly old hand-me-down's. But now that I have some money I'd like to buy one.
Any suggestions?
The only one I have in mind is one my friend sent me.

Get that camera just don't get it with that lens. What lens are you used to shooting with?

On my last camera it was a 80-200mm but I have no preference. I always just used what I had.

Really, your only lens was an 80-200? What do you shoot?

(Not>>281905but I agree with him the camera is fine, though I'd think about saving money with a 20/30/40D and checking out other company's DSLR offerings in person, see what you like.)

In that case I'd recommend getting the Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS lens and the 55-250 IS lens. Also, to save money you could consider getting the Canon 40D or 30D instead of the 50D. They're all essentially the same camera with minor newer tech differences on the 50 and 40.

That was the only lens I had with my last camera.
I honestly shoot whatever I think looks interesting. With the last camera I shot some skateboarders and got some good looking shots.

Would I be missing out on anything significant going from the 50 to the 40?
Price isn't really an issue, though I'd like to keep the total around or lower than $2000-2500.

Short answer - no. But if you really want to spend $2,000 go with the 50D, those two lenses, a spare battery or two, a couple 4-8GB CF cards, card reader and a sturdy (~$150) tripod. Then spend a couple years finding out what you can do with it all before you go spending more. Also, download and learn some basic photoshop if you haven't already.

just as good, half the price, in camera shake reduction so you don't have to keep buying it with each lens, weather seals
