It's just a lovely lens, it really is. Without a doubt my favorite.

What's this? Black and white that I actually like? No shitty borders, bits of dandruff or pubes on it? B&W that puts it to good use and is nicely developed and scanned? THIS CANNOT BE! MY WORLD VIEW IS SHATTERED.

I like the photo. Very soft and natural. Well done. :)

Candlelight only, with 160 ASA film? Madness you say? Nonsense. 1/15s, handheld with mirror lockup, f/1.9.

Finally, though I'm not a big fan of this photo for its own merit, just look at how well the film handles the highlights of the candle. It's perfect, literally perfect. No high-contrast CA, you can see the little blue bottom of the flame, and that radiant, beautiful glow around the actual flame. I'm sure a D3 or MkIII or something might achieve similar results, but this is with a $60 body from craigslist and a $100 BGN lens from Keh.com. Just beautiful.

I have to say im not loving the grain here, really puts me off!
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA

I think it's something to do with the scan, not the film. I'm looking at the film right now with a loupe, and it's just dandy. Those scanners do automatic levels in order to balance it out how they think it should be, eh. It'll print fine. These are more like digital contact sheets, that's how I view them.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>98220
I think that's the scanning, since it's grain-free on the film. Those automatic scanners do an auto-levels I believe. I view these scans more as digital contacts anyways. It should be fine if I get a print made.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
Yeah, that looks like scanning artefacts to me. You've also got some lines running down that last pair.

The first two are really great and the last one you posted for its own merit is good. The middle two are meh; not bad, but not really saying much other than "here's a person," and not saying too much about them. The first of the two I'm talking about is at a strange angle, and the second is at too plain of an angle. Cropping it tigher (the second of the two) would help; use that big negative. But really great work on the first two.

Out of curiosity, why'd you opt for 6x4.5 over 6x6 or 6x7?

Thanks for the critiques. :) I do plan on using the XBOX HUEG negative, it's the nice part about medium format: it's made for cropping like crazy!

About my choice of 6x4.5... I actually would've preferred 6x6, but this was available, and when I did my research on the Mamiya system, I discovered that the lenses are dirt cheap AND Mamiya has the fastest MF lens ever made. That sort of sealed the deal for me. I don't think it's a bad aspect ratio, it's starting to grow on me. I just need a prism finder if I'm ever going to do verticals. It's hard as hell with the waistlevel.

This one was a double exposure while I was driving back to Austin... one shot of the raindrops falling on the windscreen, one shot of my cousin. Came out interestingly, kind of Polaroid-y.

Makes sense, since I know you're big on fast glass.

As for the critiques, no problem. I honestly enjoy critiquing other people's work in anything; my best friend over the past few days has had me crit her term papers, but she cut me off today from one she just started because she felt bad about giving me all that work, even though I love doing it madly and she knows it.

There's a guy on flickr who, I swear, is my brother from another mother. Dude has all the toys, all of Nikon's fastest glass, and a D3 to put it on. 50 f/1.2, 85 f/1.4, 105 f/1.8, 200 f/2 VR, this asshole has it all. I wish I could be him. :(

Convince yourself he has a small penis or a congenital heart failure in the wings.

He's missing the 58/1.2 Noct-Nikkor and IMO the D300 is better than the D3. Slightly larger sensor, much larger body.

Take heart without wishful schadenfreude.
>> Anonymous
>>98298
Dude you got it backwards, D3 is the big 1.0x crop sensor.
D300 is the smaller 1.5x crop "D200" sized body camera.
>> Anonymous
>>98305
I was referring to the D3 when I said that, I know. I was explaining what's wrong with it compared to the D300. (Not that they're not both good cameras.)

1.5x bigger is a bit more than "slightly" imo. and a lot of people like the handling of the pro bodies more

Yeah, I don't get that.

but does that make him a better photographer? :D

If nikon's next FX camera aint for me, i'm just gonna move into Medium Format. I'm doing alot more landscapes and Medium F sure helps.

get a 4x5. or do a barrel roll.

www.flicr.com/moaan/ this guy shoots almost exclusively with his Noctilux, the Canon f/0.95 and the Konica Hexanon (i fukken have this lens!) f/1.2. it's like, fast lens heaven.

these are nice great light portraits, heavyweather. i'm impressed. strobist has convinced everyone that you need two flashes, a bowl covered in foil, remote triggers, light stands, empty spaghetti boxes and gaffing tape to take someone's picture. you've shown that all you need is a nice, big northern window, or maybe some candles.

that would be www.flickr.com/moaan/

flicr is, of course, one of those fake portals. the ones that offer russian brides and cheap viagra.
