Wow. Pretty shocking the difference there. I know the price makes you expect it, but it really shows up why the DSLRs and lenses are worth the money.

A 70-200mm L lens? I WANT.

From the top image.

Shows you how much of an image is processing.

Can't fix the CA or the lack of detail, but with a little processing it holds up a bit better than in the original.

I'm still eyeing up a 70-200L too. The f/4 ones seem to be great performers, especially the new IS version.

Nice and clear comparison, I suppose. I wonder if that would be enough to cause a shitstorm in the "Canon Talk" board at DPReview?
>> Anonymous
>>115155

That looks like shit.
>> Anonymous
>>115156

They would just say your SLR with a 70-200 weights 5 tons and can't be pocketed.

And also that a PowerShot G9 could have a better image quality after they process it in RAW.

hey waitaminute, are you telling me that a dslr is better than a point an shoot?

good to know.

"Reasons to use a DSLR : high ISO perfofmances, true TTL viewfinder, more control over DOF, and that's it. Reasons to use the S2-3-5 : compact size, cheaper, videos, swivel LCD, great fast lens (you'd have to shell a lot of money, and carry more than one lens, to compete with it)."

great fast lens, lol
>> Anonymous
"That "true TTL viewfinder" is a complete and total joke. It's only an approximation of the scene you'll finally get and any metering done on it is only a further rough approximation. Yes, you need higher dynamic range in a DSLR because the DSLR can't ever expose the scene properly in the first place. You'd be better off with a hand-held meter from 70 years ago. DSLR = a waste of good technology."

LOL! Is that from their board?
>> Vincent
>>115182
LOL, let them live in their strange little world where P&S's are the greatest camera's.
ITs not like you would see them taking pics at sporting events or after 5 PM.

I use compacts reguarly myself for different reasons, and I'm frankly ashamed that puts me anywhere near these people.

"Why is Canon EOS XT cheaper than the G9"

"To lure in the dSLR world with a long line of lenses to buy."
>> Anonymous
"I had such a bad experience with the Canon Rebel XTI that I returned it after one day to Best Buy and got the Canon G9. The photos are so much better, the colors, the sharpness. There's just no comparison between the two."
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
These quotes are all real? Wow. It's bizarro world right enough.

There are always those who feel the need to justify their bad decisions.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
But the thing is, for their shooting it's probably fine. Most people don't bother making prints.

Don't get me wrong, i still think they're deluding themselves, but let's not make that same mistake ourselves and think DSLRs are the end all.

G9 is much better for the general consumer market that shoots in auto modes.
The results will appear better on a G9 to these people compared with the XTI and the kit lens.

I gotta admit.. The 18-55mm kit lens is a horrible piece of poop. It is way way way too soft.

I still don't mind using it for wide angle shots, it'll be replaced with my new 10-22mm soon though :]

>> Anonymous
>>115237
You'll have a hard time completely replacing the 18-55 with the 10-22 because the 10-22 is way too wide for most situations.
>> Anonymous
>>115237

Learn to stop down to 8.0. Problem solved.

Indoors? Use flash.

Can't use flash? Don't use the 18-55.
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
hehe RIP AND TEAR!!!

Never realised how expensive the G9 was either...

can't really say a thing about it though, never used one... come to think of it, never even seen anyone use one either.

>>115145

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the top picture was the 20D and the bottom one the A570?
>> Jeremo !iKGMr61IHM
>>115275

No, i would drop to my knees, cry, vomit blood and question the existence of God.
>> beethy
>>115242
I very rarely use the 19-55 range.
Most shots I do are taken at 18mm.

And the reason I'm getting the 10-22mm is for the ultra wide angles.
I have several photoshoots planned with which I will only use the 10-22mm and my current 100mm 2.8 for. :]
All good!

>>115256
You're right, I should actually stop down to f8. I'm still a total photo noob and never remember to do this.
However, the softness can be remedied quite easily with unsharp mask.

Compared to some of the L series lenses, I weep :(
The IQ on L is so fucking good
>> Anonymous
>>115275

If the top pic were the 20D, it'd mean the person taking it obviously have no idea how to use the camera.
>> Anonymous
>>115294
OP here. It would actually be impossible to produce the top pic with the 20D and L lens assuming AF was on unless I smeared vaseline on the front element or something.

These are roughly 100% crops btw (the 20D one is about a 90% crop because I couldn't get the focal lengths exactly the same, 10% isn't enough to make a real difference though).
>> Anonymous
>>115306
And they were both on Av mode to show the difference in metering capabilities of the cameras as well. The A570 came out a bit overexposed and with dramatically less dynamic range than the 20D.

> Why are you interested if the xti didn't make you happy? Just curious?

Its really hard to answer, but I guess it wasn't a jaw-dropping experience for me. For an $800 (body+IS kit lens) dslr, It didn't really impressed me or other members of families with the output images. We (family members) all thought i could've spent less like the G9 and get better and sharper images in daylight, at least, for almost half the price.

I guess I just want to justify my spending; cleaner and better low-light is not worth $400 more IMO

At least the 3" screen would keep me satisty until i can afford a better/sharper lens. Yes, I would spend the extra $400 for a bigger screen and newer body if you would ask me even if i'm still stuck with the less sharp kit lens.

I was also under the impression the 1D was better for sport too.
>> Anonymous
>>115966

A 1D Mark III would actually be really good for some sports. 1.3x crop is a decent compromise, but getting 10fps is absolutely awesome.

Also, a 40D is a good choice (beware the 1.6x crop) if you are on a budget. 6.5fps is still very fast.
