Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC as a lens for a beginner with a canon EOS-10D, what do you think /p/?
Do any better cheap options come to mind?

Looks like basically the same thing as the EF-S kit lens that Canon ships with most of its cameras, but mountable on full-frame cameras and APS-Cs that can't take EF-S lenses (e.g., the 10D).

So yeah, should be a good beginner lens, and probably just about your only choice for a real wideangle on your 10D without paying mad bank for one of Canon's expensive wide angles.

I've got a 18-55 Nikkor that came with my D50, and while I grew annoyed with it quickly (low-light = no-can-do), I find myself coming back to it for those 18-24mm shots. I don't see myself using it after I get the Tokina 12-24 though.

Don't bother with that lens, spend like an extra 100$ and get something better. Not sure what canon has to offer for wide to semi telephoto lenses, I know Nikon has a 18-70 f3.5-4.5 which is only like 250$ new and its a very good lens.

Canon should have something similar.

Or forget the wide end and pick up a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

get a 24-120mm
