Some flashes are very good at this, I haven't had any problems with the 283/285. The syncshoe is just a little thing that you slide the flash on to, like your camera's hotshoe, and it has a sensor in the front. The sensor trips the flash when it detects the light from another flash. Daylight means the sun won't fool it. I imagine most are daylight without saying so these days.
