Use a couple rolls of cheap print film, then go out and play with your dials and settings, whether you've read the manual or not (although it's always a good idea). There's nothing more fun than getting to know a camera... depending on what type of dial you have. Just go wild, try to write down what you shot when and on what setting, then you can sort from there
