I would crop out the wires up top, and possibly cover the bird poop. the floor and backdrop are interesting, but the model a little to snapshot posed.

Good lighting, the background and floor are doable but her poses and what she's wearing is kind of boring.

Also, the colors are worse in #2.

This was my first time doing portraits really.

She came over explicitly to do them, but didnt think to dress for them.

Also, what are some good poses to instruct a subject to do?

Less fat

The extreme lighting and non-poses don't really mix.

>Also, what are some good poses to instruct a subject to do?
Topless, bending over, arms stretched straight, hands at knees, fingers interlaced, tits hanging down. Works every time.

Make sure she's relaxed and just holds poses for a short while but is constantly changing and moving. If you talk with her while she's posing or just act silly, you can help relax her and get some good shots of her laughing because inexperienced subjects tend to be more tense behind the camera and laugh easier because of it but you have to be quick with your finger.

Also, go crazy with experimenting.

Holy shit, great advice? On my /p/?

First of all, you're showing too much of your background. It's very dull and not worth it. Focus more on your subject by getting a tighter crop. Secondly, your subject is just standing there. Look at magazine covers. See the celebrity there? Is s/he just standing there? Of course not. Find a way to get your model to interact with something. Remember to use the hands, they're an important and expressive part of the model. Your lighting's good, but you need to separate your model from your background a little more. Either keep the model further from the background or try a soft spot lens filter. Try a different angle. Everybody shoots from eye-level, invest in a step ladder and shoot from above or lay on the ground and get your model looking down on us. Once you start shooting from a different angle, get the model to do something different with it.

Great link, I'm browsing the rest of their videos now, definitely some useful stuff there.

Model doesn't seem to be too interested. Good lighting, but I agree that the background is distracting. If anything, this would turn out better with a crop. Like mentioned before, make sure your models are relaxed. If anything, give them something to do. Hold a conversation with them about something that interests them... anything to make them seem more alive. Overall, it's a pretty good start.

dont shoot a fat girl in a full frontal pose.. try a little 3/4 (not myspace angle)

nice rich tones in the floor boards, the texture of the metal door is very industrial and is clashing with the model.the background lighting and vignette is good for the eye not to stray and the colors are good too.

the only vignetting is very slight due to a UV filter @ 17mm

good lighting and all that, but about the model:

what emotion were you trying to capture? disinterest and/or boredom?! then you were spot on.

Though to be fair, in your first post you said this is only 1 of a couple. So take a step back and review what you wanna publish on the web. Even if this is 4chan and hardly anything of value comes from here, every little bit of C&C helps right?

Fat model

BARF

She shouldn't be standing like that. Have her standing on an angle, feet apart, lighting that is actually coming from a direction rather than straight on will give her some good shadows on her face and make her look moreso curvy than fat, like she does. She needs more eye makeup, and she looks bored. Also that dress looks horrible on her, or if she wore something with it, covering her shoulders.
I get that she's your friend and you don't want to tell her she's fat, so you don't need to tell her that you need to change a bunch of things because she fat, for one thing she knows her size and will probably understand.

OP here

In response to all the clothing and "omg fatty" comments: I'm not trying to be a fashion photographer.. I was trying to do portraits.

i notice Mike Disfarmer's backgrounds are usually plain backdrops.

Yeah.. not trying to copy him exactly.. just an influence w/ full body shots, serious-face, the north-facing window lighting, etc.

your quality of image is good.color lighting everything.
just the choice of background is confusing.even Alfred Steiglitz coupled the background with the subject.
