canon s3 is / s5 is Anonymous
Hey /p/ so we want to buy a new camera but we only have around US$350 to spend (400 tops).
We were thinking about trying to find a Canon S3 IS which is discontinued, else just going ahead and buying a S5 IS instead.
What do you think? You think we should get top of the line DPS or a cheap DSLR?

What about the batteries? We are a little scheptical about how long cameras that don't use their own battery and use just normal NiMH AA can last.

Buy whatever you can afford. Its not rocket science. If you don't want to spend the money on the S5 then the S3 is your option and it will work fine.

Good and modern AA batteries can last a long, long time. I've used them in flashes before, which is a very draining application for batteries. The difference between modern high power batteries and the batteries of years gone by is like night and day.

But the S3 is the same or maybe even a little more expensive than the S5, the problem is that it is hard to find. So we wanted to know if anybody nows about any other as good or better camera on the same price range.

Understood about the batteries, thx

In the Canon range, S2, S3 and S5 are all about equal. S5 has the latest bells and whistles so I would try to go for that if the prices are about equivalent (I got mine for <300 EUR on discount, used ones appear fairly frequently in the same price range so try eBay or something). S1 is fail so don't buy that.

For another kind of camera with many of the same capabilities, take a look at the Panasonic Lumix TZ-5, it's actually more compact with 10x zoom and an image stabilizer.
