Until today I thought HDR was just another annoying cliche among techniques such as insta art B&W vignetting and you know what, but it's much, much worse.

First, take at the photo here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/korayem/1459097244

If your eyes are not bleeding yet, check out the comments.

"HDR a bit overdone, but still nice"
"nice pic... very good colors"
"Well done, the HDR gave it more detail..."

Oh my fucking god. They can't be serious, right? Tell me that the Flickr community is just a bunch of subtle trolls.

I find a lot of HDR to be oveprocessed & spoiling but after a revisit - I feel strongly that the high level used here just works well & compliments the scene. I find this a highly memorable & imaginative image.
One of the interesting side effects of HDR's is the ability to enhance localised detail. This can flatten the global contrast to the extent that a scene does take longer to "decode". It is the case here IMO but that means it takes a little longer to take in - just like tasting something sublime!

I've never had much Lomography rage. A lot of the stuff they write about their products is eyeroll fodder but I have to give them credit for trying to revive film photography - otherwise you're getting digital photoshop-raped 'pictures' like OP. I even discovered a great pinhole camera through lomo, though I didn't buy it from them.

>i still rage over cubism though

I would say get the fuck out for this, but otherwise your post is on the mark.

Digital has allowed photographers to go in any stylistic direction we want; we're no longer limited to the tonal curves and color palettes of Kodachrome, Tri-X, Velvia, HP4, etc. Some people have done very good things with this, and some people have done very bad things. Some people are working in shitty styles, but the work is still effective; I hate the Baroque style and period but that doesn't mean I don't think there aren't any good Baroque paintings or sculptures. (Incidentally, I don't like this style for the same reason: it tries to overwhelm the eye with unsubtle, superficial form. Bleh.)

The OP example, while I would've processed it totally differently (I prefer much more realism myself), is still I think a good photograph. Not great or even much above decent by any means, but competent and well-composed.

Overall the reception of most people to this stuff is like people who shat on every Impressionist painting just because it was in a new, radical style. Let's just hope this one doesn't birth new ones like Impressionism did, but dies without heirs.

TL;DR the style sucks ass, but don't shit on stuff done in it just because it's not what you personally like.

L2/read:

>The OP example... [is] not great or even much above decent by any means

And the very next sentence after the one you quoted:

>Let's just hope this one doesn't birth new ones like Impressionism did, but dies without heirs.

The quality of the specific example is irrelevant to the discussion of the style, and the quality of the style is irrelevant to the fact there is, in most cases, a knee-jerk reaction against any sort of visual style in photography that could not have been done with film.

I hope HDR to this degree never makes it into any respectable part of the photo world. Some HDR has already made it in, but it was all kept within some degree of reason, and I'm sure it's been used in many places where it isn't obvious.

There is actually an excellent analogy to make here.

Audio compression is a technique originally developed to fit more, not less dynamic range into a medium (phonographs) with a very shallow bandwidth. Compression enabled phonograph music to sound more like the human ear perceives live music. Eventually compression was used to make music louder, and thus making it sound utterly inauthentic.

HDR was developed to compensate for the sensor's deficiencies compared to the human eye and create digital photos that more closely resemble what is seen by the eye in reality. Instead, people have turned it into something to make their photo more "noticeable."

tl;dr: technology is always used by dumbasses to fuck shit up.
