Hello, /p/.

I've never even considered photography as a hobby before, and I'm certainly unfamiliar with the intricacies of its pursuit.

However, I've been having trouble sleeping lately, and I've been absolutely awestruck by the majesty of sunrise.

I've been appreciating the beauty around me; I want to take up photography.

So, gentlemen and ladies, please impart any and all of your wisdom pertaining to photography - choice of camera, techniques, faux pas - I just want to hear what you have to say about photography.

I would start off with film, simply because it offers the best quality for your money. Now that's not to say digital can't reach or even surpass that level of quality. It's just that these cameras are expensive, maybe a little too expensive for someone getting into photography. I wouldn't suggest a full manual unless you have a really good understanding of optics and how light works. But, really it's up to you. I would also suggest looking at some photography to give you that 'eye' and get to where you can identify a good shot when you see it, and maybe even some art critique books, to help you with composition. All that aside the most important thing you can do is just get out there and take pictures, and learn from that.
