Olympus E-420 Anonymous
First time posting here. Been playing around with point-and-shoot digital cameras for years now and I've decided to take a step further. I know photography can be pretty costly initially and theres tonnes of choices when it comes down to buying a new SLR camera; which is why I want to get this right the first time. After much research and talking around, I'm thinking of getting this model. Good choice, or should I keep on looking elsewhere?

Olympus is shit.

If you want a budget DSLR you should consider a Pentax K10D before any Olympus model.

If you're thinking about becoming ZOMG PRO LEVEL and are worried about wanting a full-frame camera you should get a Canon or a Nikon.

Stop posting as Anonymous, Butterfly.

Sony cams aren't as shitty as people say they are, but they're on par with Pentax's low-end cameras.

I was playing with an A200 the other day, and the thing felt like a fucking feather. Lighter than shit, and clearly plasticky as fuck.
>> Anonymous
>>264708

that's because every $499 dslr will be like that? look at the d40/rebel/olympus, they all have the same cheap quality

go try a A700 and come back
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>264708
...

The a200 is their bottom-of-the-line camera. The Rebels and D40/D60 also feel feather light and plasticy.

(And that's not necessarily a bad thing for any of 'em.)

guys stop trolling the op.

op nobody uses sony.
the camers are ok but the lenses are expensive and nobody uses them.

Please, I hate the A200 compared to the A100, the A100 was so much nicer in every way.
A3/50 is a total joke also.

And yes, i've used an A200 a fair chunk.

>>264712

Thanks for the response, AC.

You're right, about the A200, it was actually an A300 that I was playing with.

I was jealous about the swivel screen and live view until I actually picked the camera up.

So let me get this straight... the biggest pro-Sony troll on this board is admitting that Sony's cameras are getting WORSE over time?

LOL YEAH EVERYBODY SHOULD BUY ONE RIGHT NOW.

they can win with "godly marketing" and "slaughtering everyone with low price"
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

A300's still low-end. It's like the D60 to the A200's D40. And really, I would complain more about the shape of the body than its plasticness and lightness--it's like beveled the wrong way where your thumb goes. In my admittedly brief amount of time playing with one, that particular fact made it feel really unstable in my hand.

But anyway, this is all off topic.

Problems with the 4/3 system: Smaller sensors than all other SLRs out there mean it'll always have sensor noise that's slightly to significantly worse than the competition. No full-frame upgrade path. Tiny, dim viewfinders. Lens selection is limited compared to Canon and Nikon.

Advantages to the 4/3 system: Slightly smaller and lighter. Lenses compatible (with adapter) with Micro 4/3, which is actually an interesting system. Cheaper telephoto lenses. Theoretical image quality advantages owing to the lenses being designed for digital.

Personally, I wouldn't suggest going with the Olympus system. The disadvantages outweigh the advantages for me. Your mileage may vary.
>> good cameras Lance
if ur lookin for a good camera, many people like olympus, minolta, and even fujifilm, i personally have had good luck with minolta, but as for the big names like canon, nikon and sony, i would only buy canon, mainly because of the lenses, that and the nikons feel cheap and i wouldnt buy a sony camera just because its not what they do, id advise u to buy a canon camera, but go a step above the rebels

cause it's compltely expected for somebody to like every low end body a company makes?

even d40 owners admit the no af motor and whatever else nikon crippled on it sucks.

>>264727o full-frame upgrade path. Tiny, dim viewfinders. Lens selection is limited compared to Canon and Nikon.

You're assuming everyone wants to upgrade.

And what percentage of the consumers do you think that is? 1%? 2% 3%? Certainly not more than 5%.

And most of that piddling little dickwart of a set of consumers go out of their way to buy Canon or Nikon because they're massive fucking tools.

The. Majority. Of. People. Who. Buy. DSLRs. Only. Ever. Use. The. Kit. Lens.

Pentax is tailoring their bodies for what people actually buy. If you're going to fault them because they don't have ZOMG PRO-KWALITY BAWDIEZ that's fine, but you need to understand that THE VAST MAJORITY OF CONSUMERS don't even know what full-frame MEANS, let alone have any fucking interest in buying that shit.

>>264742even d40 owners admit the no af motor and whatever else nikon crippled on it sucks.

Every D40 owner I know, and every D40fag on /p/, keep saying they get by "just fine" with AF-S lenses.

Which is kind of true.

>No full-frame upgrade path.

I agree with everything you said except for this.

Be careful what advice you take from this website. You'll find that you're just going to get a bunch of brand faggotry.

The Olympus line of cameras are great cameras for the money. What ac said about the viewfinder is true. However, if you don't wear glasses and have good vision don't let it be too much of an issue. As someone with direct experience with the cameras I can tell you it's not as bad as the fanboys would have you think.

Full frame. Well, despite the fact that FF cameras still have pretty glaring drawbacks they are pretty baller. If you ever want to upgrade to FF you're going to have to go with Nikon or Canon, however the lenses that you will probably buy initially with your first camera will yield crappy results on a FF camera. You'd have to invest new money into high-end lenses anyway when upgrading to FF so I'm not real sure it's even that much of an advantage to own low-end compatible lenses before hand.

Pentax and Olympus kit lenses are better than the kit lenses for entry level Nikons and Canons. Nikon and Canon both have a larger line of lenses for you to choose from in the future which is nice. However, it's not like there are types of lenses that you simply won't be able to use if you go Pentax or Olympus.

Basically what I'm saying is don't buy into the sky-is-falling brand faggotry you'll hear from Canikon fanboys. Go to a photography shop and handle a few models and see what feels right for you.

Hell yeah!

>>264720
Yeah, basically. It makes sense, they needed to enter the market with something well spec'd for its price, which the A100 was, now that they've gotten a foothold in the market they dont need to be best in class anymore. Instead of dominating the low end they've introduced the A700 (certianly not a bad camera) and now taken a big punch with the A900. All they really need is a higher end sport/photog body and they've got a pretty similar lineup to canikon.

ANYWHO

so stale, so disgusting

I don't think anyone considers the A100 to be best in class.

WHY? JUST WHYYYYY?

Would you put 3 AF points so close together? It makes no sense at all.

At least space them apart a little bit more like the Nikon D40/60 so they're useful at the edges.

Because only the center point is usable anyway.

Also, the Pentax K10D and K20D have some of the largest and brightest viewfinders in their class, despite their relatively low prices.

THIS THREAD IS AWFUL

if you plan on going full frame dont buy an olympus.
ive never used and 420 so i cant really say much about it but i have an 510 and i love it, ive handled canons and dont like the feel as much.
try to handle as many cameras in your price range as you can! all the entry level dslrs will be basically the same!
ignore all the people saying brand x is shit its just trolls they are all good. it just depends on you.
do you know what kind of lenses youl be wanting? what kind of photography youl be doing?

this is still an extremely good deal!
id say though do research elsewhere your going to like whatever camera you buy, /p/ is too full of trolls to come for real advice anymore.

There is nothing wrong with the Pentax pentaprism system. A pentaprism is better than a pentamirror. That is why the guy you were responding to said pentaMIRRORS = fail.

listen to this guy. definitely use the cameras firsthand. compare their weight, layout, viewfinder and bang for buck, make sure the combination works FOR YOU as nobody else can tell you what's best FOR YOU. don't listen to the salesmen at the store because they tend to know jack.

also, I like the sound of your olympus purchase
