Best upgrade from 18-55? Anonymous
Hey /p/,

I want to upgrade my 18-55 lens to something with longer range but don't want a dedicated telephoto.

What should I get?

AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR
AF-S 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G IF-ED DX
AF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED DX
AF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR II DX

18-200 for versatility
18-135 for the budget option
or the new 16-85 VR for better wide coverage and my choice of the three.

Is it being sold yet?

One of the best kit lenses. You may want a more significant upgrade from your lens, though.

Very handy, but has a ton of distortions you'll often have to correct in photoshop. Overpriced when sold not as part of the D80 kit, too.

Only if you need that extreme zoom power.

I suggest you look at Tamron 17-50/2.8 (which is only marginally inferior in image quality to Nikon's own insanely expensive 17-55) and maybe Tokina 16-50.

OP here, forgot to mention this is for a D70 by the way.

Yes, the 18-55 VR is from B&H Photo for 200$. But I don't know why I mentionned it since it doesn't give me any more range.

Pretty much, I want to more zoom but with the best IQ possible.

I read reviews and most say the 18-70 is better than the 18-135 and 18-200.

I haven't looked at Tamron or Sigma though.
