No need to sage sir
I looked it up on the web site and it does look pretty sturdy, but sadly I do not have the funds to buy that SLR

Camera's don't suck. I've used the same, old, shoddy camera for 2 years now, and I've lpayed around with more expensive SLRs, but to tell you the truth, I love my good old NIkon.

You can't blame a crappy shot on a crappy camera.

So buy a used D50/D70s/350D/K100D for around $400 or save up your pennies until you can. Don't waste another $250-300 on a P&S unless you HAVE to get that 12x zoom.

D40. Was going to get the Canon G9 but D40 was cheaper, more-accessible controls, and the most important thing (to me) was the great noise performance.
Pic related. ISO 3200

OP:

If you take mostly this kind of shots (read: if you don't need the shutter to be quiet, which most people don't) then you're looking for a used entry-level DSLR.

The "best" is the Pentax *ist D or DS, which based on useful features puts all the others to shame and tops all but one other crop DSLR in viewfinder magnfication. It's the only entry-level DSLR ever with two control dials, for instance.

But it's not about what's best per se. Go to a camera store, a real one, not a Wolf Camera or a Ritz Camera, and play with all the current, or if they have them, used offerings. See whose design philosophy you like the best, and buy an old Rebel, D50, 5D (Minolta, not Canon 5D, oh and Minolta's stuff is made by Sony now, so try the A200 if they don't have the 5D in their used stock), or that *ist, or whatever the old Olympus models were.

And then buy the one that matches.

I use a Pentax K10D that usually has a Tamron 28-200 attached to it, and when needed, a Sigma EF-530 DG Super.

It's been good to me.

As backup, I have a KX that I can either slap on the Tamron 28-200 to, or I can use my Tokina 28-200.

I really, really like the convience of the superzooms. That, and they're pretty good for what they are.
