just bought a nikon d40x. and a 50 f1.8 mm lens for it. it is well known that this lens doesnt have a zoom. not to sound like a newfag but whats the smallest size lens you can buy for a nikon digital SLR with a zoom?

What do you mean by "the smallest size lens"? A lens with the smallest physical dimensions or weight? A lens with the shortest focal distance? A lens with the smallest aperture?

nikon d40 series only autofocuses with AF-S Nikkor lenses. So just got to your camera store and look at all the AF-S lenses and get the smallest. whetever you mean by that

If you want a small lens, try the 40mm f/2.8 pamcaeks. Can't get much smaller than that in a F mount.

On a serious note here, using a prime lens extensively as a newb should instil a bit of discipline and hopefully give you a better understanding of composition.

Beats zooming around like a scrub when you don't have a clue what you're doing!
