Filters save the day Darkain
This past weekend, the temp was hovering right around freezing. It snowed, but it didnt stick. I was doing mainly indoor shooting. The sun came out for a bit, so I decided to do a quick photoshoot outside. We were climbing on some rocks, and then *BAM*!! I slipped and landed directly on my camera, which hit directly on the front of the lens.

I had my polarizer on the lens at the time. The impact dented the metal housing to the filter. The filter ripped off the threading to the lens. Part of the lens housing cracked. The filter's glass also cracked.

Dispite the damage to the housing, the lens still works just fine. The auto-focus motor is still working as expected. I just dont have any filter threads anymore! I still managed another ~2,000 shots at the event before the weekend was over after the camera hit.

So, what sort of mishaps have you all had while shooting?

I can't judge a shoop without the original, please post for comparison.

And that's how digital technologies ruined photography, my friends.

I was crouching down to get a better angle (was using a P&S at the time) and being the fat and physically weak slob that I am, I lost my balance and fell backwards. I instinctively hurled my arms back to try and catch myself but the camera was still attached to my hand by a strap so I ended up slamming it lens first into the ground. The last cylinder of the lens was bent. I tried forcing it back and it snapped back in place then I turned it on and off to make sure it retracts well and took a few test shots with zoom to make sure there were no misalignments. The Canon A550 is fuckwin.

You don't snowboard, skateboard or do much physical stuff, do you?

You NEVER catch yourself with your arms when you fall backwards. Great way to break one or both arms/wrists/hands.

Seriously - learn to fall. It's a wonderful skill to have.

I can't see how not being limited by the film's roll capacity has ruined photography.

If anything, it was a good innovation for photographers.

The assumption is that if he took 2000 pictures, it's mostly fluff because he wouldn't have time to compose. Spray and pray, no thought, etc.
Of course since we don't know how long the rest of the event was, or what kind of results were produced, it's a stupid assumption.

You have to understand that there are multiple forms of photography out there. Not everything is absolute composition with a perfect studio setting. About 1,000 of these shots that I took were from stage performances.

The filter probably caused more damage because it was metal and secured to the lens (via the threads).

If it had hit the plastic edge of the lens, you probably would have only seen a few scratches and no cracks like that

Yay! You saved a shitty lens!
