We all know that every photo we take is the best, so why not have a little a themed shoot and we can discuss whose was the best from it?

But first we need ideas, so what could we shoot? Try and keep them random and unique--no braod and faggotry stuff like motion or light.

Pictures of wallets.

There was a /p/ competition a *few* months back.
With an online poll etc, can't remember the details - but it actually worked with people voting for the best photo and whatnot. I think everyone who entered had to post as Anon or something? .. wait that wouldn't work. I dno *shrug*

>>257379
IIRC:
there was one person who owned a site where they were all hosted. Photos were submitted to him with personal info and he reposted them ont he site minus that info.
you were able to vote on the poll after registering (to prevent voting for your own and spam voting)

ITT we pay no heed to Santayana's Warning and attempt a /p/ photography contest yet again.

In b4 everyone just sort of loses interest and apathy consumes it.

Yes and no,

The reason "motion" or "light" work so well is due to there been so many ways to work with this word...

a subject of "wallets" or instance, will fall down to "who has access to the best light set up" not rly a fair test for the countless new comers and hipster faggots that make up a good 80% of /p/

Common themes

Portraits
Landscapes
"Your City in 5/10/1 shot"
Family/Friends
Animals
Sports

etc. It's really not that hard to think of a theme for a topic, OP

>>257986
Wallet is superior to all of those as a theme

The whole city in 6 shots thing was awesome.

Really awesome, i think over the 6 months it took, almost all tripfags entered work.

What I think was the best is that it required some actuall work on our end to go out and finish a not that easy objective. Something similar to this that requires us to do more than just blatent P&S would be great, but I have no clue as to what.

>>258017

I agree.

I think a good spin-off of that idea might be Your day in 6 shots (or 10 shots, or whatever). Something like this, whatever it is, actually creates a good challenge and allows you to try different things for each shot in the series.

your day in x shots would be sweet.

I think the best way to pick a theme is to reject anything that has already been photographed and stuck on /p/.

No Holgas/fake cross processing/vignetting
No EXTREAM MICRO DOF BORKEH FAP
No HDR
No LULZ THIS IS MY WAIFU
No ringflash
No raves/clubs/DJs/concerts
No portraits of pretty women
No self-portraits
etc

Eliminating all the classic things that everyone has seen and is entirely sick of would make it much more interesting. A theme of something that no one looks at, like "bus wheels", would be okay. Or something more open like "it is framed well" or "two words" or "i am a dork" would be pretty fun to do.

Contests get boring when you can predict the entries. Unexpected is gold.

all stupid things to say. vignetting is good when used right, same with hdr, same with bokeh, same with about everything you said. the competition shouldnt limit you to things you cant do, the pictures just need to be related by a central theme.

Exactly. It's generally assumed that in a contest, those shots that utilize shitty post-processing techniques or otherwise fail, will ultimately just be ignored.

Don't get me wrong, I love pretty women as much as anyone. I have some epically awesome shots of my girlfriend on 120 Plus-X. But, except for rare occurrences, a picture of a woman is generally less interesting than other subjects because people don't look for other interesting aspects. The part that makes it a "good shot" is that the girl is attractive, and that gets tiring after a while. Especially since (a) attractiveness is subjective and (b) the composition, expression, lighting, etc are generally forgotten, where they would be the most important parts of the photo if it were a more average person on the street or something.

I'm diggin' the "your day in X shots" idea.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
i think the requirements for the photo should be more technical and less thematic. i see lots of photos on /p/ that would be much better if the photographer just took the time to focus correctly, expose correctly, straighten horizons, etc.

so, basically, the requirement is that whatever photo you post for this, you had to have spent at least an hour making it. however you divide that time is up to you. it could be 2 minutes composing and focusing and 58 minutes lighting it strobist-style, or it could be more like large format where you walk around for a half hour just deciding where you want to set up your tripod, then spend another half hour focusing and figuring out exposure. if we really wanted to make it worth something, we could even require a warts-and-all contact sheet that shows all the bad photos you had to take to make the one really good one.

we could all make half-hearted suggestions about x in x photos, or whatever, but i think just making a technically proficient photo for once would be a better experience for /p/.

i like the idea. too lazy to organize anything like this myself though.

oh, and for a witty name to lend the idea some credence, i suggest...

one hour photo.

The problem is there's a lot of styles and subjects that just plain don't lend themselves to this, unless you count just continuously shooting the same subject for an hour. I mean, even Avedon, a studio photographer, unless you're talking his fashion stuff where he had sets and elephants and everything- all he used was a white backdrop and a reflector. That's fifteen minutes, tops.

And what are you talking about with /p/'s pictures not being technically proficient? Whatever you think of it, it's impossible to make a technically inept picture with modern cameras unless you're trying to or you have no idea what a light meter is. /P/'s just fine the technical side, even lighting thanks to everyone bowing to The Great Strobist. It's everything else it sucks at.

I understand what you're trying to get at, the technical foundation of any artwork is vital, but the 1/125th nature of lots of photography means skill at it can't really be pulled out just by taking a long time at it. And I can't think of a picture accepted by the rest of /p/ anyone's posted that's technically deficient without intent or physical necessity (e.g. noise in a picture taken in a dark room).

so in summary the contest will be your day in X shots with wallets. WALLETS!!1
>> sunshine !!WK+Lu8k4giy
>>258091

Yes and no. I think those should just be guidelines. As in, the judges will look down upon these shots. But, if the photographer thinks they're just that awesome shots that all of /p/ just can't miss seeing them, then by all means they should contribute.. but not necessarily win.

but actually no lomography sounds pretty good to me.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>258208

bullshit, all the way around. go ahead and crank out an avedon in 15 minutes. i'd like to see it.

and, bullshit again. at least half the stuff i see on /p/ is misfocused, or underexposed, or has shitty white balance, or has any number of basic photo 101 faults. if you turned it into a serious photography class, it would be graded as "reshoot" before anyone got to critiques.

this is about getting people to really think about the photos they take, as they're taking them, and how to make them better before they leave and get back to their computer.
