Hey /p/

I might apply for a newspaper here soon and I'm just wondering what kind of photos do you need in a portfolio? Do you need wedding shots?

So far I have a bunch of street photographs, some photographs from a baseball game that I shot, some shots that some chick asked me to do for her senior portrait and some photos from the chanology protest. These are just the shots that I have unedited because I have a ton others that I post-processed but no longer have the originals of.

Help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't bring the Chanology project. If you have to explain it and then they visit this website, you probly won't be hired. Unless the person conducting your interview is a /b/tard.

Just because I took photos of the event doesn't mean I was associated with it's message or /b/tards.

Newspaper photojournalism is one of the most competitive occupations in the world. Unless you have a formal education and lots of experience, stellar quality photos, or really good connections, you're going to find it very challenging to get a job. If you have so little to choose from that you can list them in a paragraph, and you have to ask a place like /p/ to help you edit, you're probably lacking the experience necessary to even start considering i as job.

It's just a local newspaper and I talked to the editor there and he said that the photographers get assignments by submitting their portfolios and based on how good their work is.

Not true, you say, "These were of a protest against Scientology at wherever," and you're in the clear. They're not really going to be interested in what your connection to it was.

Actually, it's entirely dependent on where you live. If you live downtown anywhere listed on a national map, then yes, it's tough. If you live in a smaller town or have your sites set on a smaller paper, then not necessarily.

OP, you've got the right idea. Maybe find some more events to cover and you'll be good. One of the things they're going to be interested in seeing is how well you can get original content from a boring event and still cram the basic idea into the frame. Spend time getting to know your wide-angle lens. 28mm full-frame is about the norm.

Good luck, OP. Around what area are you applying?

Thanks man. I'm in Oceanside which is about 38 miles north of San Diego.
