Lens for full body shots? Anonymous
Hey guys, I want to do some full body shots of people, such as the one in the picture.

I've Googled a bit and it seems like the most popular options are the 85mm and 70-200mm lenses. Or some other "long" primes for good background blur.

However, this is the problem, I have a Canon 400D and the crop factor is 1.6. I don't have any lens to test it but at 70mm, I'm at 112mm and correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't I need to be super far away from the subject to get full body?

Are those suggestion only valid for full frame cameras? What options do I have for a Canon 400D?

The 85 works really well for that. And yes, you'll have to stand a good ways away to get the full body shot. If space is an issue, the good old 50mm f/1.8 is a good choice.

(The "classic" portrait lengths for 35mm film are 85mm and 135mm. With the 1.6x crop, that's very near to 50mm and 85mm)

What lenses do you have and what other interests do you have for photography? Budget? Sometimes there's one that can fit a couple of niches well enough to get started or you might have something decent already.

I have the 18-55 kit, 50/1.8 and a Speedlite 430EX.

I want to do those aspiring model stuff because it's easy money.

So the issue really is all about how much distance I can back up?
>> Anonymous
I don't really have much money for now. I could find like 200$ I guess, I think some Canon 30 or 28mm lenses are about that price.

>>106825

How much room you have really does count with these things. Trying to do it in a small sitting room or a bedroom means you're not going to be using the longer lenses for those kinds of shots.

The 50mm 1.8 works well enough when you have a crop body and limited space.

"Easy money"?

You sure about that?

>>106828

I figure 150-200$ a pop for a few hours of work. I do some batch auto levels or curves, correct the white balance, burn a DVD and that's it.

Don't really want to make a living with it. It's just a hobby.

then after the shoot you could have sex with them. bareback riding if you do the job well. happens all the time.

>>106834

They're not women I would like to have sex with. And that's all I have to say about that.

You want to spend $200 at most on equipment and then charge wannabe nobodies $200 a pop to pose for a wannabe nobody photographer? You're a loony.
>> Anonymous
>>106841

I'm not even going to spend any money now. So it's all win for me.

200$ is dirt cheap for a shoot. Again, I'm not doing this for a living. I do 3 of these and my equipment is paid for.

>>106832

LOL
no one is that stupid, especially considering how models "serious" enough to drop hundreds of dollars on 4 hour photo shoot most likely know a bit about photography, or at least the going rates.
No one is going to pay some amateur photographer without a portfolio anything more than a pittance for some body shots.

but what do the photos look like?
>> Anonymous
>>106844

It's not dirt cheap for a talentless hack like you to do it.
>> Anonymous
Dudes, these are some ugly ass women who think my pictures look good enough.

I see an opportunity and I'll take advantage of it. I never said I take great pictures. I 'am' a talentless hack and I'm making some money that way. Thank you and fuck off.

Sheesh.

$200 is too much if you don't have experience with the shoots. The last thing you want is to dig yourself into a hole for being unprofessional and not having professional looking images. You'd be surprised at how reputations spread.
>> Anonymous
>>106864

That's fine if you are getting into photography for work.

I am not.

You people keep ignoring that.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>106865

It doesnt' matter if you're doing it for work or not. I read the thread- you said you didn't. What I am saying is that even if you dont' plan on doing shoots in the future, for that much you better be prepared to put the time into the post processing (this includes airbrushing, fixing blemishes, etc), site scouting & lighting set ups for your shoot. They are expecting high quality first class images from you. You should be prepared to provide them.

>>106865
Mostly we just think you're going to be all like "Hey, I'll take your picture for $200!" and they'll be all like "... No."

If you're dealing with people who want to be models, they're going to know better. If you're dealing with people who don't want to be models, they're not going to be willing to pay you $200 for a photoshoot.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>106870

Also: never give them models a full DVD of all the shots taken, there's no way in hell you should even THINK about doing what you mentioned in>>106832. It isn't that easy
>> Anonymous
You couldn't even post your own photo for the thread? Sage this shit.

This first part isn't aimed at Liska or ac because those guys are reasonable posters.

This is for you, anon.

You people simply are disgusting.

And I am okay with that because this is 4chan. You can come back and say something smug and feel like you've accomplished something but nothing got accomplished because you are anon just like I am.

Anyway, ac and Liska. I know fuck all about photography. I just happen to have a beginner SLR with some lenses, that's why I came here to ask what to use.

The women already know what to expect from the pictures I've shown them. It takes little to no skill to make a nice portrait with some background blur with the 50 prime and they're okay with that.

"What I am saying is that even if you dont' plan on doing shoots in the future, for that much you better be prepared to put the time into the post processing"

Why, just why would I even bother with that? This is a one time thing, how many times do I have to say it?

I'm putting the Speedlite in an umbrella to the side, some cloth or wall for the background and I'm done. Fuck that post processing. They probably won't even use the high resolution images I give them.

Come get some, you motherfuckers.

It's alright, anon. I forgive you.

I don't know why you're even asking us anything. You seem to have already decided on what you're doing and you've no intention of buying the lenses you were asking about in the OP.

Honestly, myspace and facebook photos are becoming a profitable business. I'm just a guy who owns a dslr and I've made ~50 bucks a pop a good dozen or so times shooting rich girls who just want to look pretty for internet pictures.
>> Anonymous
>>106885

Aside from my little generic portrait setup, I don't look at other equipment stuff.

I just needed to know if there was some lens I could use for OP^.

The ones you mentioned there would cost you way too much for your budget. You'd have to stick with what you have.

I started to respond to this.. but i'm going to stop and just say the following. All i'm going to tell you is do your homework. For $200, it isn't just a one time thing, and be prepared to give your models high quality images. That includes post processing. Think poses through, they likely have no idea what they are doing and am going to want direction from you. Never give models ALL the images from a shoot. Never give them high resolution images, are you giving them prints for that $200 ? What size? What resolution prints are you going to give them? are you going to put your copy right on it? Are you going to go through useage rights with the models? If you are going to be lazy with the shots, it will show. That's all i'm saying and i'll leave it at that. Just consider what you're going to give your clients, because even if it is just a one time thing, they're still paying you.
>> Anonymous
>>106910

Why are you still on this? It was over.

"For $200, it isn't just a one time thing, and be prepared to give your models high quality images."

Because there's a set amount of money that obliges you into making this a line of work. It also ensures a standardized level of quality.

This might apply to you or to someone doing this kind of thing professionally. It doesn't apply to me. We've made it clear a long time ago.

"That includes post processing."

No, it doesn't. If they are okay with paying me that much with no processing at all, that is their problem.

"are you giving them prints for that $200 ? What size? What resolution prints are you going to give them? are you going to put your copy right on it? Are you going to go through useage rights with the models?"

No, no and no.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
I keep wanting to respond to you, but then i realize i'd be an idiot for doing so. because you won't listen to a darn thing, this may come back to bite you in the ass later if you don't think things through. but we'll see.

Good luck.

What was this thread about again?

OP asked something to which (s)he clearly already knew the answer? I would like to say (s)he's stupid, but then I'd be stupid because I said someone else is.
Stupid thing.
