Hey /p/
I'm just now getting into photography and I need some help.

I'm mainly going to be doing shoots for local bands and stuff. Also for people's companies.
So most photos will be focusing on a group of people (4-6) or just one person.

Any certain things you recommend? Also, I don't want to have to spend like 2,000 dollars on a camera, just in case I find out I'm terrible at it. :)

Any suggestions at all, throw 'em out here.

do not.

Use a fisheye lense.

It looks badass on band photos.

I don't see how this is a troll.

Anyway, avoid sepia tones at ALL costs.
Whenever I see bands using that I want to gag.
It looks so stupid.

OP here.

I think sepia does look dumb, and so does black and white.

Black and white should only be used with acoustic artists because their pictures are normally more dull and solemn.

You're going to be taking photos "for people's companies"?

I feel sorry for these companies.

its not trolling but is simply someone who has high expectations...

to OP, dont take this personally but i was also in a similar position to you a couple o' years ago and TBH the last time i took photos for someone "professionally" was a fair while ago because, to put it bluntly, any myspace whore can take a half decent pic today, and when it comes to bands, they cant afford to/dont want to pay you for photos, and as for portraits/corporate shots etc, no offence, but i wouldnt hire some kid to take the shots, id rather pay and get some amazing shots for my money.

this of course is null & void if you have jobs lined up from people who are willing to pay etc...

but if not, bear in mind its an expensive "hobby" to get into seriously...

though take this as a side note, i dont actively seek jobs for my photography as it aint my profession, and im actually studying elsewhere.

tl:dr, dont get your hopes up of getting jobs.

OP again.
I'm not doing it for money at all, I want to do it for fun.
I think it was like, 2 months ago, I went outside with my camera and was just kind of looking around and started taking pictures of random stuff. When a local band that I help book shows with saw the pictures he wondered if I would do pictures for them. I had to say no since I felt like I was stealing from them, being pretty much a photographynoob. Sooo yeah, any questions, just ask, I guess.

ideally if you can, buy a cheapish d-slr and a fast simple prime such as the 50 1.8 or if poss 50 1.4 or even 30 1.4? as youll need the fast aperture for most low light band shots.

dunno the nikon equiv but perhaps try 2nd hand 350D, or even a 20D? an dont worry, its not all about "gettin dem megarpixulz bro!"
