okay i found a photolab that was willing to hand process my b&w photos from my trip into town.

yea, shit pretty much sux.

what i did wrong:
went into town with the intention of "documenting the street", but actually never figured out anything more. didn't really decide what i was trying to do, capture the people or the buildings.

what i did right:
i survived with my camera intact and made some friendly chatter with some randoms.

what i learnt:
B&W film != colur digital converted to b&w. the tonal range and contrast is completely different.
black people are incredibly difficult to meter and expose correctly and capture on b&w.

what i should've done:

Fuck off you hipster faggot....

You have NO reason for wanting to shoot film!! it makes no difference to you at all, since your no the one developing it!

The best part about film is the hours in the dark room, getting your prints just right, your sending your shit off to a lab to hand process and print, and your paying though the nose for it (at least you should if a half decent lab)...

Shoot digital and stop been a scene faggot,

Or just set up your own dark room, it costs next to nothing if you look on ebay...

im working on it, okay. meanwhile i wanna get some shit on film in the first place.

Shooting film dose NOT make your photos instantly better... as you can see, you suck dick..

Also, LEARN TO FUCKING EXPOSE!! All these prints are thin as fuck, they should have been printed in a much higher grade to make up for your mistakes when taking the photos (wich you cant do coz you dont have a dark room)...

USE DIGITAL, even your shitty D40 is better than you fucking up roll after roll of film, learn to compose, learn to expose, lean to take a nice fucking photograph!!

THEN use film if you must.....

Sick of these faggot scene kids..... go die you little shit

forgot photo, the only worthwhile one imo.

this is "Innocent"(yes, that's his name), he's a puppeteer who puts on shows in Church Square which is the place dead center in town.

yes those bags on the bot right ruin the shot but i didn't wanna touch his stuff.

Way to be a total dick for no good reason. Fuck off. Seriously.

OP: Don't listen to the douchebag. There are plenty of reasons to shoot b&w film, even if you can't process your own film (though I suggest that you do learn how, as it's inexpensive and rewarding). B&W ? insta-art. B&W ? hipster bullshit. When I started shooting b&w, I had no way to develop it myself, so it got sent to a lab. It wasn't spectacular, but it was a start. Twelve years later, I do everything myself and it all works out a lot better, but I wouldn't be doing any of it if I hadn't started by sending my shit to a lab back in 1996.

Some general tips:
1. Go to the public library and check out a few books that cover the B&W process so you can read up on the process. The better you understand it, the more you'll be able to do with it.

2. Look into developing your own shots. Tanks and reels can be had cheap used, chemistry is inexpensive, and you only need something like a changing bag to load your film in - the processing can be done in room light once the film's in the tank.

3. As an alternative, try a C-41 process chromogenic film like Ilford XP-2 for the time being. You get high-quality B&W negatives, but don't have to pay out the ass for lab processing because you can just take it to a one-hour photolab. Shoot it at a slightly lower exposure index (125 works well for XP-2) for better negatives.

4. Just keep shooting and don't listen to dickheads who tell you otherwise.

thank you,

the process seems easy enough(developer -> stop bath -> fixer -> rinse?). i think the photography store should have reels and tanks but im not sure about changing bags - any way to DIY one?

so XP2 can be developed using colour process. is there anything else i should know about it because the clerks at the photolab don't seem to be familiar with Ilford at all despite being listed on their website(perhaps just a shitty branch, or mebbe the sales clerks =/= technicians).

you can use a couple really thick trash bags as a changing bag iirc, but seriously just cough up the money for a real one, they're maybe 10-20 bucks and you'll never need to buy one again, or worry about getting your film light-struck. seriously try to develop your own film though, you dont have to make prints you can just scan, but developing yourself gives you alot of control over what the film ends up looking like.
keep trying and keep shooting in manual, you'll eventually get a feel for when the meter is lying or not. i usually pre-meter on something roughly uniform light grey and just keep it there unless i move into different light. if you have a manual-focus lens it also helps to pre-focus it to what you think you're going to be shooting in a second. keep in mind at f/8 and above focusing really isnt that important if you're not getting terribly close to stuff. at f/8 anything from infinity to 7 feet away can be in perfect focus.

You missed the subject here I think. You made the subject the signs on the building, rather than the people and the road.
A good rule I find is if there's text, a sign or something, if you wouldn't intentionally put it in the photo, don't include it.

The hell my photography teacher said that its cost alot of money to produce a dark room not to mention the enlarger chemicals and replacing the fixer and developer what about the rest of the equipment...

To the Op, you learn from experience, if you can take a class at a college in Film Photography if you have excess to one, I did and i worked out great wonders i learned to take b&w film and developed and print myself. These guys are right. Its a huge self acomplishment of doing everything yourself. Anyways if you don't have access to a college class like that then the next best thing is research on the internet.. Good luck

Nice to see someone else try at bw without heavy vignetting etcetera. Does your camera have auto mode? I thought it was aperture priority. And you know what you did wrong, so, just keep on trying.
