my personal favorite for years has been the powershot A series.

decently priced new, and REALLY cheap used. i think i payed $120 or so for my a85 when that was the current model out. i was never unhappy with the image quality for what the camera was either.

Powershot A series is win. Look into the newer ones and see what you like OP.

Depending on the price you want to spend, the size you'd like the camera to be, and any particular features you want, there are a few to recommend.

Personally I quite like the Casio Exilim series, something like the Exilim Z11. It's nice and compact and takes SD cards, and doesn't cost too much (about £130 in the UK). It's also fast and incredibly easy to use.
If you're not that bothered about size then the Powershots are great, because they're nice and fast, but also quite powerful in terms of features. Plus they come with viewfinders, which is a big help if you're taking pictures on sunny days, when glare can be an issue.

I'm using a Canon Ixus 60 right now. It's good value for the money, but it's all really up to how much you want to spend.
