Sorry for creating another gear thread but I need some opinions. I want to replace my 18-55mm crappy kit lens with something a bit better. I wish I could afford the Nikkor 17-55mm 2.8 but there's no way I can swing it. Does anyone have any experience with any of these others?

Sigma AF 18-50mm f/2.8 DC EX macro
Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF]
Tokina AF 16-50mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro DX

Not really being considered but... How does this one rate?
Nikkor AF-S 16-85mm f/3-5-5.6G ED VR DX

The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 is delicious.

That is all.

i use the 18-55 vr all the time on my d300. motherfucker is extremely sharp, and it cost 125 bucks used.

I've only used the sigma, but im guessing they'll all produce the same results to an extent. Small variations possibly with performance, but it probably wont be noticable.

Seconding the Tamron, it compares with much more expensive lenses.

I thought about that one too but I wasn't sure of the IQ...

Yeah, pretty much. I've read reviews on all of them and they have about the same amount of problems (CAs, Barrel distortion etc...), I was just wondering what /p/ recommended.

I travel extensively and find that the Tamron 17-50 is incredibly flexible and usable for a variety of situations. Pictures are crisp from macro of plants and insects to wider architecture shots.

Seconding the Tamron option.

Mnn this thread is relavent to my interests.

The Tamron looks fucking good, only thing stopping me is lack of IS. Its such a ridiculous jump to the 17-55mm Canon as well, fuckit.

Buy the Tamron locally so you can check the focus. For Nikon users, I think the old screw drive version actually focuses faster. I might be wrong.

get a standard Nikkor 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 if you cant afford that and if you want the zoom option make up your mind what you want it for, i have a 10-20mm sigma its nice for landscape and a 30mm nikkor for full body portraits and a 50mm for headshot portraits
