What is FTM? Anonymous
Hi /p/, I'll admit I use AF 98% of them time unless it's too dark to AF.

I have a lens that has FTM but what is Full Time manual focusing?

"It has FTM, allowing you to manually focus without switching out of AF mode."

Is it just a fancy term for saying it's safe to turn the focus ring at any time without damaging the lens?

Yeah, pretty much.

I've never actually used the full time manual focusing feature. When I put the switch on AF, I don't even touch the focus ring, and manual focus is almost impossible with my viewfinder. I need a nice split prism screen for my 30D ;_;

This guy is correct. It just means you can safely tweak the focus, even while in AF, without doing any harm to the lens.

So essentially, it's just so I can stay in AF but still MF if I want without moving the switch.

Man, marketing..

It really is a nice feature. I have it on the kit lens I have, and I learned with manual focus, so I'm so used to hitting the focus ring, that since I got my new sigma, I'm having to force myself away from it, so that I don't damage my AF motor.

Not that many lenses have this, so it is something worth mentioning in marketing.
