Hey /p/, my apologies for adding to the number of "what should I buy" threads on here, but I have a question and was hoping you guys could help me with it.

My current camera is a Canon EOS Rebel Gii with the kit 35-80 f/4-5.6 lens. I have that, and a little Sony P/S. About a year from now I'll actually have the cash to upgrade to the camera I really want, a Canon 40D.

I know it's going to be a while before I get the new camera, and I've accepted the fact that I'm going to be disappointed with my camera until then. My question is about lenses. I've been considering picking up a little 50mm f/1.8, or possibly a 75-300 f/4-5.6 lens, something so that I could expand my possibilities and remove a bit of that feeling of "I can't do shit with this thing" that I've been having recently.

Now, when I get the 40D I'll probably get the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM kit, since I obviously don't have any lenses that feature either USM or IS and figure a relatively cheap one would be good to try them out with. So I'm looking for suggestions of what to buy now that I could have a range of different lenses for different situations, and prepare me for the eventual lens shopping spree I go on when I get the 40D.

Piece of garbage I'm currently using: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Rebel-GII-Camera-35-80mm/dp/B00008URR4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=photo&am

Thanks.

Get the 50/1.8. It's $80, a good lens, and a very versatile length on a film camera. When you get your 40D, you'll already own it, it'll be a good lens, and it'll be great for portraits.

Stop thinking about the 75-300, it's really not very good at all.

Definately get the 50mm 1.8

Also, what you have now doesn't really suck, you'd be able to take good stuff with it, buying new gear isn't going to make you a better photographer.

I know, "gear doesn't make you good", ect. I'd just like to be able to have more versatility in capturing stuff. My current lens is terrible for indoor stuff, and doesn't do well with long-distance shots either (that, and it's not the sharpest of lenses in any sense of the word). I just don't like being forced to not take certain shots just because I don't have the gear to get the image I want.
