haha, when I was in hanoi, I thought all the buildings were so weird, both because of narrow, but also like... other architectural thingers.

my ha long bay guide told me that buildings were narrow because of tax law. any wider than a certain amount, and it's into a different property tax bracket or something, but height is irrelevant.
