Hey /p/eople, I JUST got my new Olympus Evolt 510. It's my first digital camera.

I'm having a bit of a hard time taking pictures in low light with no flash. I tried upping the ISO setting and setting the exposure time to longer than normal, but I need to get it to take a proper picture without having a three second or so exposure. I also have a bit of trouble with subjects that are darker than the background.

First time shooting around, didn't really have anything interesting to photograph so I shot my cat.

He got annoyed at the end lol

Tried the macro setting, pretty cool stuff

This was nice, the sunlight hit off the floor and gave the cat a brown tone.

why not use the flash?
are you using the ket lens/es?
>> Anonymous
>>218005
Maybe it's my inability to properly set the white balance yet, but I find that flash light is harsh and cold - it seems to give a very alien look to pictures. I also find it kinda useless when subjects are far away.

Using the Zuico 14-42mm 3.5-5.6 that came with the camera, it's actually pretty neat.

If you're looking to take pictures in low light indoors you should pick up a faster lens. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 would be ideal.

Also, if you want to use flash but don't like the washed out look try setting the flash power down to like 1/16 or 1/4 power. That, and make yourself a little flash diffuser from one of those semitransparent Fujifilm white film canisters.

>>218014

The kit lenses are very nice. They're better quality than ones from other makers but they're not particularly fast.
>> Anonymous
So how much would a decent low light lens cost me? The camera and lens ran me 600$ and my wallet is now officially raped. What about a lens with a good zoom?

It's just that I tried some pictures in broad daylight and I still had trouble getting enough light.

The lower flash settings is a good idea, and I'm loving the flash diffuser thing. I've got what I need to make a cool one (albeit it will be ghetto) and I think it will work nicely. Thanks.

Don't worry about getting a zoom. The Sigma lens I suggested before is 400 bucks. Worth it, though. It's a good lens.

>>218023
Although I would thoroughly enjoy zooming in to faraway objects and even setting my camera on a tripod and doing a long exposure on the moon or something, I guess I should focus on the important stuff... 400$ eh? God damn...
>> Anonymous
>>218028

The moon is such a boring subject. Every picture of the moon ever taken is the same.

Anyway, yeah, lenses are where the money goes when you get into photography. That's how it is.
>> Anonymous
>>218029
Kinda said the moon as a example but you know when it's like 1am and you can see the milky way across the sky?

A good exposure of that would be pretty cool, I'd imagine.

>>218028
A different person than the guy you are talking to. Yeah, fast lenses can get expensive fast, but if you're looking to take pictures without flash or without the ISO being brought up to an unusable setting, but it's the only other way to go. Also you can try getting a external flash, they diffuse a bit better, can be more powerful, are smarter than the built in flash, and is about half the price of the lens, I think the Oly flash is called like the FP36 and is $200 (If you are really into photography you'll probably end up getting both sooner or later, its up to you which one you want first)
>> Anonymous
>>218033
I've got a good external flash from my OM-1 (I think it would work...would it?) and it is powerful, so the diffuse thing would be awesome.

>>218033

Good point here. It's the FL36 and they have the FL50 as well.

yeah i just used the flash basically for the first time on mine and it is a bit blue, but some simple knowledge on white balance should fix that.
lower number is bluer higher more red,

yeah the kit lens isnt that fast but its great optically i think, good bokeh

Well the flash is neat, I was able to take a picture of my case fan rolling at a 1.5k rpm and it looks like it's completely still. Had the exposure at 1/180.

I'd sure like to have a faster lens so I could take pictures with faster exposures still and be able to see something except black. The camera goes up to 1/4000 without a flash, and 1/180 with flash.

I've yet to come across the proper lighting for a cool 1/4000 shot (oh man I could totally rig up an optical trigger or set the timer with something and take the coolest high speed still shot EVER) but I'll see what I can do.

I need to pick up some memory for it though, like a good 4gb or 8gb XD or CM card.

And, what do you know... all of those photos don't require an xbox hueg lens and aren't of just the moon alone as OP was probably talking about... What a surprise...

I like my 510. But low light is kind of a drawback of using the 4/3 system since you start getting a bit too much noise at higher than ISO 400 or so... Faster lenses are the way to go.

Fast lenses are always the way to go. Even a full-frame camera won't allow you to shoot in twilight/dimly lit rooms with that f/5.6 kit lens.

You do Drake's Deck a great injustice. Use a gun next time...also no airshit.

Have good experiences with this with my 410.
The onboard flash is actually real good. The lens too, except the fact that it's so slow, but what kit lens isn't ?

Canadafag here, so it will be a few months before I can take the courses and send in the paperwork for my PAL.

I do know that I need a day with overcast skies for Drake-esque pictures.

I would never touch airshit, even with a ten foot pole. The sword is a Cheness 9260 that has seen use in Iaido as you can probably see from the scuffed up blade.
