stop using 'auto' for your white balance, exposure etc, play around a little.

Honestly, I've sometimes found that the best sunset pics are "fake". I've gotten my most dramatic sunset/sunrise photos by actually doing a long exposure about an hour before sunrise or after sunset.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about, it was pitch black when I shot this.

Argh, as usual, things don't look the same when they end up on 4chan. The tonality's a lot better when I'm looking at on my HD, I'll have to fuck with it in photoshop a bit...

Ok, here's a tweaked version.

Anyway, though, it's really hard to get stuff to look right during a real sunset. They say about an hour before it goes down is the best time for normal-looking pics, so it's hard to capture the light perfectly. White balance helps a lot, and, failing that, try doing what I had to do here. If there's some light lingering, that's better because the exposure can be shorter. (I had to shoot this one auto because the manual settings wouldn't let me set a long enough exposure on the D50...)

And there I go forgetting the pic.

I'm noticing that I tend to shoot a lot more sunrise pics than I do sunset ones...

Get an off-camera flash setup and learn to balance the light from the flash with the light from the sunset so the sunset doesn't get overexposed. http://www.strobist.com ftw.

Kinda neat. Go read up on issues of sRGB vs. Adobe RGB to learn why posting to 4chan seems to fuck up your colors.

Is that what it is? I notice that even in the "Save for Web" dialog that the colors are sorta washed out, but that, if I look at the saved pics in preview or use them as a background, they're the way they looked as I was shopping them. Even pics straight from the camera look different when uploaded, though...

The problem is that most web browsers don't respect the colorspace setting. Safari does, and I think it's an option in the latest Firefoxes, but IE just flat-out ignores it.

You may have your colorspace set to something Adobeish in camera. Dunno, though, since your EXIF says sRGB...
