Dear /p/,

I'm currently a senior in highschool, looking to go into something photography related, so building a portfolio is becoming pretty necessary. I'm confused on what to do for my portfolio (where to buy one, what looks the best, etc) and was wondering if some of you more experienced photographers could help me out. I'm looking to bring this portfolio to portfolio review days at Pratt and other colleges.

(pic related, I took it)

Just got back from a portfolio workshop yesterday :)
My notes(keep in mind this is with submitting to a gallery or for review):
Don't go over 25 images MAX, 20 preferably.
have a common theme, don't have a bunch of landscape with a couple studio pic of food thrown in there, even if they're strong pictures.
First pic and probably the first 4-5 need to be your strongest. Reviewers have seen a shitload of portfolios and you need something in there to capture their attention.
Don't forget your cover letter and resume, also, a little postcard/brochure/business card is great to throw in there, hopefully whomever is reviewing will keep it. Also, CONTACT INFORMATION
Websites- have one, keep it simple, no flash bullshit, just display your pictures, preferably in the same format as your portfolio.

The rest of my notes are in my backpack at the office, but I think thats the bulk of them. The guy we were talking with presented as an emerging photog trying to get into galleries.

Great work on the tones OP

is it really a single shot on the D70s?

You blow me away.

Personally I think your picture is overshopped garbage. Goodluck with the portfolio however.

thanks for the help jeremo and lynx, lynx you kindof touched on it, but would it help my chances of getting into a college to have portrait and studio work as opposed to solely landscape work?

i'm sorry you feel that way, but i have to say your opinion is ignorant as shit, as the only photoshopping was the black and white conversion and duotone, none of the motion blur or blur was done in photoshop, it was all in camera

im new aswell, would it be better to photoshop an image then put it in your portfolio or should it be unshopped?

Depends what it's for and what the requirements are. If they require unretouched images, you don't really have a choice. If they just want your best, most polished work, shop away, especially if you're doing fashion or product work.

That's a really lovely shot. Nice range of tones and textures.
