If the pic is yours, you had your auto-focus on the flower, if you wanted that and the dog to be in focus try lower your F-stop, for a shot like this you could try f/8 to f/11. but then to properly expose you would need a slower shutter speed, so if you would like to counter that you can set the ISO to a higher number.
better yet, don't use all of your autofocus points, select the center one then focus on your subject, lock that focus, move camera to your composure of liking and snap the shot.
I'm not sure how to lock focus on a Nikon. but on Canon you can select the One Shot autofocus mode to do what I am talking about. Also, AE lock.
