Nikon DK-21M magnifying eyepiece Anonymous
What's up /p/

I want to get the Nikon DK-21M magnifying eyepiece for my Canon 400D. Everyone online says it fits perfectly on Canon bodies too.

I want it to help gauging focus and to make composition easier.

From what I understand, this makes the viewfinder area larger but not as bright. Is that correct?

Will it be anywhere as large as a film camera viewfinder? Even if it doesn't, I just want it larger than what I have right now. Every little bit helps.

Any disadvantage other than losing brightness? I'm assuming it's like if I had a f/4 or f/5.6 lens mounted vs. a f/1.8, which doesn't bother me that much.

Thanks dudes.

I use the DK-21M on my D50, and it gives me a viewfinder about the size of the D200's. Smaller than film, but still much nicer.

If you feel like doing it for me, can you make a mockup in PS or Paint to see how big a jump I should be expecting?
>> Anonymous
>>174996
why are dSLR eyepieces so small? also, if I wear glasses, will that affect anything since you need to use the eyepiece so much in an SLR?
>> Anonymous
>>175005

Something about autofocus system that makes DSLR viewfinders so small, I don't know the details.

And I have glasses, it's not as practical as the naked eye but I can manage it. It helps if I have my other eye open but that depends on the person.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
I can't really make a mockup. It's just a nice size jump. Not insanely dramatic, but it helps.

The viewfinders are small for one reason because the sensors are smaller than a frame of 35mm film. The sensor crop affects the viewfinder as well.

I can shoot alright with glasses on.

Bah.

What about coverage? 400D and D50 are at 95%, do you lose even more coverage with it?
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
>>175021
No, coverage remains the same.
>> Anonymous
So the only disadvantage is that it's dimmer?

Why aren't more people using these then?
>> Anonymous
>>175030
Because they use autofocus and don't care about manual focusing accuracy.

I guarantee you 90% of people who prefer manual focus have one of these, a split-prism screen, both, or a larger sensor camera with a better finder, perhaps even with these because their finders are still inferior for manually focusing to pre-AF finders.

I looked into the Katz Eye but uh, fuck that it's more than 10 times the price of the eyepiece.

I'll use this for now.

Tell us how it goes. This is relevant to my interests.

>>175063

Won't get it for a while, shipping for it is more than its price so I'll wait until I buy a few more things.

But uh, heavyweather says there's no downside to it so it's $20 well spent.

Even though he's a cock mongler for the stuff he buys.

Since this has gotten me interested in putting a magnifier on my Nikon I decided to have a look at this stuff on adorama.

It turns out that you can buy an eyecup for -5.95.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>175066
Well hell, for that much, I'll just buy one myself.

>>175070
Now *that* is a heck of a deal right there.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>175072
Annnnnd I've done it. So I guess I'll tell you how it goes. :)
>> Anonymous
>>175070

None of those are magnifying.

Please do!

>>175075
You've got to admit it's a fantastic bargain, though. Assuming shipping isn't too much.

I think he was saying that it's not a magnifier you just bought. That you just bought a little piece of rubber that goes on a camera you don't own.
>> Anonymous
>>175078

If it doesn't say M, it's just the same eyecup you have right now, except the rubber is in a different shape..

The magnifying ones are $20, not $5.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>175083
>>175085
No, I bought the DK-21M. ~$25 after taxes.

But you've both missed the joke. I.e., that the only-rubber one is *negative* five bucks.

when do you get it

post results with pics please

This won't make any difference with regard to picture quality. It'll make manually focusing easier. Pics would mean nothing.

pics of it on the camera..

because it's not meant to go on canons

I made this based on manufacturers' data about viewfinders, so this may not be 100% accurate.

Nikon's DK-21M magnifies the image by 1.1x. Also pictured: an 1.3x magnifying eyepiece, which is about as big as the get, plus the viewfinders of the 5D and a decent film camera.

Canon and Nikon eyepieces don't seem to be freely interchangeable. Nikon and Olympus do, though, plus there are universal magnifying eyepieces available (pictured: Seculine U-13C, which is IMO better than all first party magnifiers I've seen)

>>175567

bleh that's kind of disappointing

so it makes it look like the 450d viewfinder then
>> Anonymous
>>175570
Is the brightness loss negligible with the Seculine magnifier? I use mostly fast primes (f/1.4-f/1.8), and the 400D viewfinder is uncomfortably small, since I wear glasses.
>> Anonymous
>>175586
basically, yes

if you want a noticeably bigger viewfinder, get an 1.2x+ magnifier, a 40D or better both.
>> Anonymous
are there any magnifiers for the 30d?
>> Anonymous
>>175600
surprise, the same ones as for 400d

the nikon dk21m and olympys me1 fit perfectly on canon xt/xti

but people use them on other cameras as well

and here's a dk21m on a 40d

the Olympus ME1 is a 1.2x magnifier, so it should be between the 1.1x and 1.3x in that picture>>175567

Nikon DK-21M = 1.13x
Olympus ME1 = 1.2x
Seculine U-13C = 1.3x

sorry ac, looks like you made an impulse buy and bought the lamest one
>> $19.99 !OSYhGye6hY
To those that have one of these,
With one of these magnifying eyecups, will there be parts of the viewfinder that can't be seen after magnification?
>> Anonymous
depends on which camera and which one you're using

but you will have to move your eye around to see corners and the HUD at the bottom of the screen (if it is at the bottom)
>> Anonymous
>>175632
Depends on the magnifier and your camera. I have some trouble seeing digits on the LCD display in the viewfinder with my Seculine U-13C, but that's because Olympus was gay and put the LCD to the right of the image instead of below it.

HIVEMIND

but yeah, you lose some stuff at the edges, whether it's on the right or bottom
>> Anonymous
>>175634
On your 40d are there any cropping issued with the nikon eyepiece?
>> Anonymous
you're quoting the wrong person but yes

there will be slight cropping unless your eye is like completely glued on the eyepiece
>> Anonymous
Is there any way to get both magnified view AND longer eye relief distance without cropping? I'm using glasses and manual lenses on 400D and it really isn't the best possible combination.
>> Anonymous
>>176149
Can't you use contacts and/or a diopter?
>> Anonymous
>>176149
This doesn't seem to be possible without changing the pentaprism/pentamirror, and none of the current DSLRs have interchangeable prisms.
>> Anonymous
>>176151

I sometimes do, but they aren't comfortable for longer periods, and then there is the perception of scale, which gets messed up changing from glasses to contacts, which i'm not too fond of.

Diopter correction doesn't go far enough, but taking glasses off for every photo would be much more trouble than not seeing a complete finder view.

>>176161

I'm in the same situation and it's miserable. The change in viewfinder size going from film to digital has meant that I have to rely on autofocus in a lot of situations where I would have used manual if I was shooting film.

Add to that the fact that I get gummy eye allergies in the spring/summer and it means that using manual on a digital with my high degree of blindness is a difficult task at best.
