I'd recommend using a prime lens. Maybe a 35 or 50, and get near the subjects. Take the photo and walk away. I know it's awkward, but you'll eventually get used to it. Don't worry about blurriness and out of focus photos that much... that didn't prevent Henri Cartier-Bresson from making photographs with incredible content, although not sharp.
