How much can you change a photograph in photoshop before it stops being "photography" and starts being some other bullshit like "photo manipulation art" or whatever?

You know what I mean, right?

when it starts to change the reality of the picture (i.e. you remove key elements from the original composition) then it gets more into photo manipulation. Same with completely unnatural recoloring.

Adjusting saturation, contrast, curves, exposure blahblahblah is still acceptable as photography, though.

If you are in photojournalism or submitting to National Geographic (hey, a man can dream) then the rules are more strict than that too.

Anything you can do in a darkroom = photography.

Once you get into the "digital only" field, not photography.

Sorry for being a raging newfag, but I've never worked in a darkroom. What exactly can you do in there aside from develop pictures from negatives?
>> washer !kxrJVlZ8OE
photography by it's latin roots literally means light writing. in my book, anything that strays too far from this definition may be cool and look nice but imo it is not photography. my opinion isn't worth very much though.

Well, back in the day, the russians even "removed" people from photos. You know, enemies of the state.

So, there's a lot of stuff you can do actually on a darkroom. Digital editing didn't invented manipulation of images.

People that say photography = darkroom, have probably never worked in one. With a little bit of patience, you can do anything you can do with photoshop as well.

>>186595
You can actually do that in a darkroom.

Russians indeed removed people from photographs, however, this was touchup work after the print had been made, and not in the darkroom itself.
