If you work for an agency, they will usually supply you with some form of credentials identifying you as a photographer for that agency, but that doesn't give you any special permission to go anywhere. It's just ID, not a "press pass." Sometimes people at the gate will let you in with that, sometimes not.
With bigger events, the agency has to call ahead and make arrangements for you to have access and shoot the event. The event organizers will then issue you their own press pass that gets you through the gate, but it's only good for that one event.
Anybody claiming to be selling press passes is a scam, no two ways about it. You might as well just print your own off at home, it'll have the same level of validity.
