soup /p/,
Just posted this but my post got eaten. Image didn't show up and Reply link 404's.

I have a Canon EOS 400D/XTi. I'm trying to decide between 2 general purpose prime lenses, the 50mm f/1.8 mk1 or the 35mm f/2. I've heard a lot of talk around here about the 50mm lens but am caught wondering how useful that would be with the 1.6 crop factor. Anyone used both or have any insight?

50 x 1.6 = 80

Does that sort of FOV sound useful to you? If not then don't buy it.

No but I use the 50mm almost exclusively on a film body as an 80mm FOV isn't much use to me. Seriously considering the 35mm to gain a similar FOV on digital.

The 50 plus some extension tubes makes a decent, cheap macro setup btw.

The 35mm lens on your sensor is a normal lens, suitable for almost anything. You might want to consider a 28mm lens instead, though... it'd have the same field of view as a 56mm lens on 35mm film, which is long for a normal, although still a normal. A 28mm would replicate the FoV of a 44.8mm lens. Canon makes a 28/1.8 that's more expensive and a 28/2.8 that's cheaper. The choice between the three is yours; all ought to be good.

The 50mm is a medium telephoto, good for portraits and reach.

My advice, not knowing the particulars of your situation, would be to get one of the three normals, whichever you like the best, and set aside $10 from each of your next few paychecks and pick up the cheap Mk. II version of the 50/1.8.

I'm also considering a 30mm lens and/or a full frame EOS body (EOS 1N maybe?) since 50mm on the 1.6 crop factor is not useful to me at all.

I'd say go with the 50mm. It's definitely tight with the crop factor, but it's a great lens and so cheap that it's just madness not to pick one up. For your normal prime, I'd recommend saving up a bit and getting the 28/1.8.

If you mean the 1DN, it isn't full frame. The 1D's are 1.3. The 1DS's are full frame.

As for the Canon 50mm 1.8's... Forget the Mk.I - They're overpriced. Get the Mk.II. It's at least as good optically and so cheap that you can't really go wrong. It's a bit long on a 1.6 but makes a fabulous portrait lens. For the price it can't be beat

He probably mistook it for the 1D MkIIn, cut him some slack.

The 1n is hot stuff though <33

That did cross my mind (Hence the "If" opening qualifier) but then why was he talking about fullframe versus 1.6 crop?

Because full frames of 35mm film are full frame.
