That's due mostly to the fairly aggressive unsharp mask filter I use to make up for the sharpness issues due to film flatness. The scanner itself produces pretty clean images, they just tend to get noisy when I use too much USM.
Nevertheless for the price I think it's about the best you're going to find. It beats the hell out of cheap camera store Frontier scans, not quite on par with a Coolscan 9000 though.
