newfag here, looking for an inexpensive slr so I can post pictures of flowers on /p/ and half naked women on deviantart.
I work at a retailer that only carries 3-4 slrs, and the rebel xt and xti being two of them. I already ordered an xt from another store to have a look, and it will be 570ish after taxes, since it's 599 - 15% plus 12% tax. I was also thinking about trying to get a futureshop credit card and buying a more expensive one (and pay it off later) like the xsi or the d80..
But, I'm not a big fan of the smaller screen, lower MP (I know..), and cheap plasticy feel of the xt. I guess the xti is a little better in those categories, so would that be a good way to go?

would it be worth it to go for a higher end one around $1000ish, or just go with the canon xt?

Also anyone like the sony a-200? would it be a condender next to the canon xt/xti.
Oh yeah, the important stuff: I want this camera for general use, just getting a bit more serious in to photography, was going to do some outdoor shots, as well as macro (flowers for /p/) and people shots (half naked women for deviantart), I also have shaky hands so I do want something with anti-shake or whatever.. I also want to be able to customize things but still have the options so I can auto it at first.

D80 FTW

The XSi, will give you the largest screen, second highest resolution and the image stabilized lens you are looking for, out of the below $1,000 cameras.

(At a price obviously)

the 20d has too small of a screen, I don't want to get laughed at when I take this out to impress the ladies.

I'm really leaning towards the xsi, it's the one I've kinda wanted since I started looking but the price may be just a bit too high, since my wife just quit her job and I haven't even paid for the cell phone I just bought, I don't want to spend too much more... maybe I'll apply for that futureshop credit card and see what happens...

This looks metallic whereas the Canon EOS Rebel XT looks plastic.

reading this thread you sound like the perfect sucker dude.

a)
you dont have enough money to get the camera you want. so your gonne put yourself into more debt.

b)
you still owe money on a cell phone?!!!

c)
you want a big screen to impress the ladies..

oh man you have fucked priorities...
just get an xt and be happy.
then when you can afford it get some nice glass, THEN get a better body.
youll soon realise its not actually about "getting dem megapixulz" and more about what you stick on the front first.

bad advice is bad

wait until you are free of debt, then you can focus on less important things like hobbies (eg. photography)

i'm not in debt, my cell phone will show up on my bill that I am getting in the middle of next month. two paychecks until then, so I will have enough. I just have no credit, so I can't get a credit card which upsets me, since my employees can get credit cards, but I can't.
As for the cellphone I just did a hardware upgrade through rogers for the n95 (5 megapixels on that!) which will be my "point and shoot" camera for candid shots and everyday stuff.
But that does make a bit of sense, I can just get a 20d (if I can find one) or the xt, see if I want to continue with it and maybe get some lenses, and then work up to getting a 5d or something that will be a big jump up.

I think my identity must have been stolen or something, because I've tried at one of the easiest places to get a credit card (hbc) online and it said they will mail me something in a few days (aka, probably declined, since it's instant approval) A few months ago I didn't realize that everytime you apply somewhere it puts a hit on your credit, and I applied at a bunch of different banks so it looks like I was just fishing for a loan/credit card.
My bank is supposed to phone me sometime next month and try to set one up, but I applied for a hbc card yesterday (when they told me not to touch my credit for a few months) so that might mess things up.

used rebel 300d, used 350d, etc

Order the Rebel XT from amazon.com and pay 450 for it instead. Use the extra money for a photography teaching session or some accessories for the camera.

Shit... If you're gonna blow 600 bucks at least do a little research.

If you're planning to go super serious then go with Canon or Nikon, because they have the widest selection of lenses / accessories.

If you're more casual, the smaller companies generally have better deals. Also Sony, Pentax and Olympus all have image stabilization built into the camera.
