Hey /p/. I'm finally getting a dSLR with my newly-gotten birthday money (an XSi/450d to be exact), and also wanted to get some lenses to go along with it.

Specifically, I want to get an f/<2 lens for lower light or fast motion photography, but I don't have a lot of money. I found a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II for ~$85, but what I want to know is, is it worth getting?

If you can't afford the 50mm 1.4, yes.

Just get it, it's well worth it.

One time I held a entry level DSLR, shit was so toy.

i have a better idea.

let's discuss the merits of the 1.8 II against those of the 1.4, price relevant.

i need to get one of the two, but if i buy the 1.4, i'm fuck all broke. i want to ditch my canon as fast as i can for a pentax k20d, as soon as i can get the cash together. is the 1.8 really a good lens? i tend to steer clear of bargain bin plastic, but i've never shot with one.

Well, I've taken a whole bunch of shots with it, can upload if you want. The build isn't excellent, but the optics are absolutely a match for the 1.4, you just have to deal with MF being useless and AF being noisy.

Excellent lens though, for the money it's a no-brainer.

Buy a used 30d over an xsi.

if i could go back in time and realize how posessed I became with photography, I would have taken this route since a 30d is going to grow with you a little more than any of the rebel line. not that the rebels can't take nice pictures but get up to the canon 20D on up is where you get better features/flexibility.

Then sell what you've got and upgrade!

1.8 its cheap, and is still nice and sharp, very light , if you treat it with respect it should last you ages and you'll probably never leave it behind due to weight. its manual focus is very cheap but usable.

Those of you telling me not to get the XSi, it's a bit too late, as it's already shipped out. This is just going to be my "gateway" camera anyway. I eventually wanna move up to the really high-end professional ones, but this is good for me for now.

you should've gotten the D40 with a 18-200 VR lens. All you need for all your professional needs!

Except that everyone in my family has used Canons, so I know how to use them. I would get a Nikon, if I even knew how to work the damn thing

All you need for professional shots is the XSi and the new Canon 18-200 IS lens! I use them all the time.
