Good evening, /p/. What's the best way to make digital pics into material photos? If archival quality is not an issue, does /p/ think it's better to go to someplace like walgreens or to get a printer and do it yourself?

A photo printer of your own.

Getting them printed by someplace like Walgreens or one of the many digital photo printing places online will be better quality and cheaper than doing it at home in 99% of the cases.

That 1% is of you shell out the thousands of dollars for one of the really expensive photo printers currently on the market.

I figured it would be better to let someone else worry about it. Thanks!

I got a mid range photo printer from Canon and it works great. I compared them to the supermarket prints and they are actually better, plus I have it on hand and more control over everything such as what paper to use and so on.

But unless you print massive amount of work, you still pay more in Ink and paper per print than a decent photo lab (Walmart and the like are not DECENT)
Costco surprisingly has some high quality printers, and you can access their printer profiles to tweak them prior to sending them in.

I'm UK, so no Costco. I do print a lot and at various sizes. The costs, convenience and quality are all well worth it. Shitty printers and labs are in the supermarkets here from my experience. I know someone who works in one of the biggest chains and he uses a printer in his own home and suggests the same to people he knows as he gets better results. Pretty pathetic.

High street is unreliable or overpriced to silly amounts. Many are overpriced for larger prints too, so a few 10x8 or awkward sizes or custom shapes and this thing is very handy for that. Never mind the fact that the printer is handy to have for other non-photo things and so having one is a NO-BRAINER for a PC user like me.

The internet is the only viable alternative for ordering prints and I don't like the wait and lack of control. The quality isn't any different from my own prints either. I'd have to be ordering poster size that I can't print to make it worth while.

It's a far cry from the days when I had some local developers I could hand film in to or get prints from and trust them and their skill and pride in the job. Now it's an internet service that I never meet the staff from or see or I do it on my own.

Is there a common lab that you do consider to be decent?

Man people in the UK (and all of Europe) get screwed for anything photography related, Your prices on new (and used) equipment kills me!

Depends on where you are, MPix is quite reliable, but I'm in Canada, so I generally use local ones. For special orders CameraCanada does Metallic's and other fun stuff.
