I say the top LCD on dSLRs are outdated and not needed.

what say you, /p/?
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
I say anything but a single display on an SLR is outdated, anything of importance is shown in the viewfinder.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
I rather like them, especially Nikon's layout there.

Why bother with such shit when live view of what the camera is capturing is available on even the most humble of p&s cameras?

what say you, /p/?

Just wondering, but what do you think the advantages are of having a top LCD instead of just using the big back LCD?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>157872
I used to actually think that, because I am dumb.

>>157866
I still think that. I am probably still dumb.

Troll, I know, but that's like saying rocket ships are outdated because even a lowly bicycle can be driven on the street.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
The only info missing from the viewfinder is a realtime histogram, which is only on live view which is then not even in the viewfinder.
>> Anonymous
I miss it more and more for each time I go out shooting with my 400D because of having to get that bright LCD in my face.
>> I||ICIT !!mknjFN/v/49
its nice to have all of the necessary information in one small area at a quick glance.

its also good because all the buttons that matter like iso, metering, drive, AF and WB are all near it, where as if the back screen was used and the buttons stayed on top it would be fairly useless.

of course if they made it so the big back screen displayed every single bit of current info at all times other than playback or standby, and the buttons were at a location in proximity to that screen i would enjoy that.
i dont see it happening anytime soon though...

the top lcd uses less power. i like the top lcd because i like to be able to check my settings without having to look through the viewfinder.

not trying to start a flamewar, but, i really really <3 the way KM/Sony does it.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>157913
That's the way Canon (with the XTi and XSi) and Nikon (with the D40, D40x, D60) do it too, so no reason to have a flamewar.
>> Liquefied !!CF1+3tSFCce

Top LCD is an easy way to check settings before shooting and uses considerably less power than the rear LCD. It's also great for bracketing or odd-angle shots where you're not necessarily looking through the viewfinder when adjusting settings.

I will not buy an SLR that doesn't have it.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s

but KM had dual dials, sony dropped it.

I love dual dials for functions, i wish sony kept them.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>157916
Thing is, even with the rear LCD being used as the main settings display, my XTi lasts weeks between charges. So I don't think the power savings argument is that valid.

From my (admittedly limited) experience, the back LCD is easier to read than a top LCD. The only top-LCD camera I've really used is my old film Rebel, though, so it's possible I'll change my tune when I upgrade to a better DSLR.
>> Anonymous
it seems kinda pointless and out of the way to me. I can even see having it on the back of the camera, but the top seems like it's too "remote" to look at constantly.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
The top LCD is fucking invaluable, and one of the best parts of using the Texan's D200s.

Butterfly drops his guard and amits that Sony isn't perfect?
OMG WORLD IS OVER
>> Jeremo
I use the top LCD all the time, because it is ALWAYS there. None of this turn it on bullshit with the back LCD.

It's there for a reason so use it, or don't.
>> Anonymous
taking pictures without a top LCD is not possible.

>>157962

same applies for liveview
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa
what i REALLY like about a top LCD is that i can glance at it and it tells me how many frames i've got left on the memory card, even when the camera is turned off <3
>> Anonymous
>>158000
More memory and you never even have to worry about seeing that number.
>> Anonymous
The top LCD is nice because I can set everything up before I bring the camera to my eye. It's also great when the camera isn't at eye level and I've already composed my shot but am making adjustments to exposure and modes.

That said, I would rather a return to dials in place of LCDs and buttons. If there were a digital version of the Nikon F4, I would be happy.
>> I||ICIT !!mknjFN/v/49
>>158001
know what ya mean, ive got a 4gb card and ive had no more than about 250 shots on it. it holds over 400 btw.

its nice just knowing its there if i ever need it and with memory soooo cheap, why not.

>>158019
>The top LCD is nice because I can set everything up before I bring the camera to my eye.

QFTW, its also in a nice position so you can just the let the camera rest against you, or on a table and adjust as you see fit.
also, superior brightness/contrast allows adjustment in ANY lighting situation.
perhaps i think its cos its and LED layover on an LCD background?

Lol poor Canon Rebel fags do not have one

This makes me happy. Tribalism exists everywhere, even on the basically incomprehensible land of /p/.

Most of the front page threads on /p/ are trolling.

Its worse than /v/ and console bitching at the moment.

Does /p/ have any mods or janitors?

mmm tribadism

i see no reason why this is trolling.

OP didn't go "OMGZ CANON OR NIKONE GUIZE"
>> Anonymous
Fuck. I used the top lcd of my D70 and then the display was cracked when the tripod w/ camera mouned fell over.

a dslr without top lcd is so noobish.

I used the top LCD and then my mom got cancer and died.
