If you're going to spend a bit more money get a deal on a D80, stores should be trying to get rid of their stock on D80's so there should be some savings there.
Other than that, the D40 will be fine. Just look into getting a faster lens, something that can open up to f/2.8 would be nice. The 50mm f/1.8 and f/1.4 won't autofocus on the d40 (or the d60, but will on the d80) which is a shame, you can still use it though. The f/1.8 is a fantastic low-cost "low light" lens.
