I will definitely be getting the Canon 50mm f/1.4, but I am trying to decide on a good zoom lens for general shooting.

Does anyone know if this Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 is any good? It's my top choice right now. My main question is about the image stabilization (VC) and the focusing mechanism (USM equivalent?).

The other lenses that I have thought about are the Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6.

10x zoom is made of fail

unless it's the Canon 28-300 L

assuming your budget is about $250 based on the lens choice, the 28-135 is your best bet if it is the IS variant

i don't think they make a straight 28-135 anyway

How so? The reviews seem to praise the Tamron.

unless Tamron magically invented a way to make it TOTALLY FUCKING AWESOME, because believe me, anyone would kill for a 28-300 lens that performs well

any lens that spans such a HUGE focal range, you're going from wide to telephoto, isn't going to be good at anything

it will be slow and soft at most focal lengths but you'll have insane versatility

Yeah, they say it's one of the better ultra zooms. Big woop. Compared to anything less than 5x, it's a piece of garbage. Too many compromises to make it usable.

Find a better product.

me here, oops

i didn't realize they charged fucking $400 for the 28-135 IS

oh well, the 28-300 is $600

that gets you stuff like the tamron 17-50 2.8, which is pretty good

OP here.

So is my best bet to go with the Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 (with IS)?

how about the 70-300mm (IS also)?

yes, the 28-135 is fine

unless your idea of general shooting is taking loli pictures from afar, the 70-300 won't get much use

28-135 is your best bet if you really need that big zoom ratio, but it's soft as shit for a lens in that price range, and pretty slow too.

A better idea if you want a kit that performs in the widest variety of situations is the Tamron 17-50/2.8 and the Canon 70-300IS (the IS part is important - it's a much better lens overall than the non-IS version) or 70-200/4L. You have a much more usable wider end (28 is really too tight to be your widest length), higher speed, and better quality.
