You know, even though the OP hasn't stated what his actual budget is, its hard to recommend an alternative to the kit. As fun as a "cheap 50" is, I'd say stick with the kit lens and see if you even want to go from there. Learn the basics of the camera itself, and actually have a little flexibility in your zoom, so you can even just see what 18mm looks like vs. 50mm.
Nice lenses are nice, but first you're going to have to learn a slightly different system for taking photos.
P.S. i think your next step should be Sigma lens and a speedlite (but then you'll be dropping an extra $500 just for that).
