Hey guys, I just got a Canon XSi two days ago and I shot this. Is it crap?

Yeah, I usually do, but I was just feeling out the camera, really. I took a college course in photography over last summer and this is the first SLR that I have ever owned. I was kinda just playing around and getting a feel for it.

always shoot manual no excuses. you're not gonna learn anything from the full auto.

bawww. They put a mode dial on the camera so that you have different options for different situations. I shoot manual to learn but have no qualms about flipping over to the fucking cruise control scene program if I want to eg. shoot a quick portrait of someone and don't have the time to fiddle around with the aperture to get bokeh without boring the subject totally.

M or Av would have been better for this though

Boring.

If it takes you so long to move your finger across the command dial that your subject gets bored, you may want to consult a doctor.

To set aperture, exposure, focal length (if applicable), ISO (if indoors) and maybe white balance if it's off? I dunno. Maybe you have a super-SLR with five control dials and are Goro. I know I would have missed quite a few candid shots in the last month alone shooting without Av / auto scene.

I'm all for using aperture priority. What I don't get is people using program or a scene mode instead of Av. It's not like it's much faster (if you've been wise enough to change your aperture and ISO whenever entering a new lighting situation), and it gimps several settings (like custom WB, I think) too.
