Thinking about getting a mid-range DSLR. Which of these would you recommend, /p/?

In b4 brand loyalty shitstorm.

I personally like the Sony line, but that's just me. Maybe it's because of the body, and the whole integrated stabilizing. Plus the loud clicking noise makes me feel happy inside.

cause the worth of the whole camera body is based on one button and obviously far more useless than the direct print button amirite?
>> Anonymous
I personally love my 40D, but then again, I've been using Canon for a few years, so I'm used to Canon's ergonomics and button schemes. The D80 is fabulous, as well.

Do you happen to have glass for any of those systems?
>> Anonymous
>>213925
"...it's one of the most conveniently located buttons on the whole camera."

It's the placement more than anything else...though Direct Print is still pretty close.
>> M?e?e?s?e??? !iZn5BCIpug
>>213925
It also has a smaller viewfinder then the low range dlsrs. High iso on it looks like shit. In camera noise reduction applied to raws, etc... It is in a lower class then the d80 and the d40.
>> Anonymous
>>213926Do you happen to have glass for any of those systems?
I do not.

So it looks like it's either the Nikon or the Sony?
>> Anonymous
>>213934

If it were a toss-up between those two, I'd highly suggest the Nikon.

You are investing in a lens family, not a single body. A good lens will last you 10+ years. You will probably buy a new body every 2-3 years. I bought into the Canon family and have never looked back. The Canon "L" family tops anything made by Nikon.

Furthermore, for any given focal length, the equivalent Canon lens is generally less expensive than the Nikon or Sony equivalent. Case in point: the bread-and-butter 24-70mm lens for canon is about $1200, but the equivalent lens for Nikon and Sony are about $1700.

wrong.

it's meant for soccer moms that just want a P&S DSLR (meaning it has live view.) Your average soccer mom is never going to use anything more than auto mode on it.

Real photographers get an a100 or an a700.

Pick your poison.

the sony and nikon 24-70 are superior.

the ziess takes the cake.

Build quality is a factor, too.

I've used both the Canon and Nikon 24-70s, and they both are pretty equal in practice.

You've gotta give a little bit of credit to Canon's marketing, too (Red ring, white telephotos)! Not like that makes any kind of difference, really.

OP should put get the a700 instead of the a350.

d40x=a350=soccer mom's tool
a700=photographers tool.

the only alpha camera that isn't a horrible embarrassment is the A200, and this is coming from the owner of an A100.

Very true. A200K is pretty cheap, pretty useful (I personally do not see the point of having the liveview), and does what you need nicely.

I'd rather have the a100 over the a200.

Poor A200 getting crippled.

Between the A200 D80 and XSWTF cannon, get whatever is the most comfortable.

Unless you are a sports photographer and need long fast glass, everyone has the same lenses. Sony are still missing a decent long fast glass range (the 300/2.8 G is still godly however)

I was just faced with this same choice and after months agonizing, I went with the Canon 40D. Nothing else in this range comes close to the features and quality imo. I was jonesing for the Nikon but after trying them all in the shop and talking to the owner (who is a Nikon fanatic) I had to go 40D. The $200 instant rebate going on now didn't hurt either.

get a used d200 or d2x(s)

No.213898

Most mid-range cameras are quite the same, it really depends on what kind of lenses you want to use.
I use a Pentax K10 and for ME it makes good shots.
Everybody has it's own favorite brand, and they claim that brand to be the best ofcourse.
Do some research on the net, there's loads of websites which show the difference between cameras.
Also keep in mind which resolution you want to use. The bigger the megapixels, the bigger the resolution. My camera makes shots up to 3872 x 2592, useful for posters for example.

Good luck with making your choice
