Ok gear fags, here is my first post for you.

I predominantly shoot nature and surf photos but make a little £ (read basically fuck all) from some architectural photos I do when I'm bored/skint.
I shoot with a canon 10D and and small assortment of lenses.

No real complaints with the 10D but my long lens, Tamron AF 200-400, is a piece of shit. Horrible auto focus, not tracking ability (thinking moving animals/ people on waves etc) and not sharp enough.

Is it worth buying a cannon EF100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM for the 10D or should I be looking to pair it with a newer body eg. 40D (once the 50D brings the price down a bit) in order to make the most of the lens.
As I’m basically selling my only camera body and main lens I don’t mind considering other brands

What would /p/ recommend?
Honest question hoping for useful insight.

Bigma is decent, soft at 500mm though, Sigma 150-500 OS is apparently better.

300mm f4 and 1.4x TC = probably best quality though.
>> Anonymous
and would you stick with 10D or invest in a new body? will the 10D make the most of a new lens or shoul I upgrade now rather than later?

No.

L glass is weather sealed, and putting it on a non-weathersealed body in possibly wet and sandy conditions is not the best move in the world. Better to get the weather sealed glass on a weather sealed body (1d, 5d, 40d, 50d).

Might as well stick with vivitamga as long as you are exposing your equipment to the elements.

Less money lost to sand.

>>275612
New camera's take marginally better pictures, since you aren't shooting where you need extreme high ISO's most of that marginal improvement is lost to you.

Buy the 300mm f4 L, its Weathersealed. Keep the 10D for now. upgrade when you have the money.

that's horrible advice. if he's been using his 10d and tamron fine now, it's going to be fine no matter what he upgrades to

and 40/50d isn't weather sealed around the mount in the first place, so that doesn't do jack that you have the best sealed lens ever

Interesting! very interesting. I'd never considered the canon 300 F4 L before. Do like the sound of the extra length on the sigma/bigma however...

some other details /P/ may like to consider

I bought my 10D second hand and it had been used as a second body by a pro before. i've used it pretty regularlyly (7000 shots) in the last 9 months and I'm wanting to sell before things start to fall off. Does this alter /p/ opinion?

Thanks for the input all new angles apreciated.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
The 100-400 is pretty damn good. Unless you've a compelling reason I'd usually suggest the lens over the body. Any good reasons you can think of that you need the newer body? Not enough Megapickles or FPS for you right now?
>> Anonymous
FPS can be a bit of an issue but thats mostly me being a bit shitter than i shouled be and hitting/holding the trigger when i should be waiting for a better shot to present itself esp for the surf stuff.

A few more MP might be nice, especially as i'm finding myself croping many of my pics because of the extreme ranges I find myself shooting from.

I'm certainly more interested in lens than body (shouldn't we all be) but i am concerned about how much longer my body can be expected to last. especially as I'm in a good position to sell it right now to some clowns who will probaly pay a little over the odds for it and might even take my horrible tamron off my hands too. basicly i'm looking at a budget of £1000 and I hope a bit less less to sort out my mismatch of kit.

>>275643

Tough call. Is the money tight enough that you need to sell to these people before ASAP before your camera dies or you upgrade it? By the sound of it you'll certainly get the most use out of the lens as an upgrade.

Student mate (not photography - conservation science, hence the nature) and worse still a masters student so no funding, no loan, no fuck all. yes money is tight but at the same time a bit of photography money keeps me in lentils.

Thanks for all the input. i'll deff consider all options.
Bed time here in the UK. sleep tight /p/ thanks again

Butterfly, post some pics!

The lens should help more than the body, AF issues with bodies are more of a Nikon thing, owing to their in-body mechanical focusing. (Crummier bodies have weaker, slower motors and less accurate systems.)

As for the body, I'd be curious to see what 1D(s) Mk.IIs are going for....

only at 240mm? You must have been very close, where did you shoot these from?

>>276761
woah that image quality is horrible, Sigma's 50-500 is even better than that.
I'm with everyone else on here, get the 300mm f4, and a 1.4x TC if you need the extra reach
You could blow up a crop from a 300mm shot at F4, and beat the image quality of this 200-400 at F8!
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>276781
Harbour wall, the guy was surfing right next to the wall as the wave broke, pretty awesome stuff.

I really need a much longer lens, even a 300 on crop was way too short but the only new ones are 400~ area!
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
my concern is that 300 mm f4 may be too short. most stuff is shoot is at 400 and some then needs cropping. Damn I wish I could aford the 300mm f2.8 and pair it with a 1.4 tc but thats right out of the window. I need a new wide angle too.

Not with Opteka! $399, no, $299 gets you this! Advances in high-index / low-dispersion optical glasses, new barrel materials, and exotic anti-reflection coatings, along with the latest in computer-aided-design / computer-aided-manufacturing, are combined to produce lenses of unprecedented quality. Diamond-cut from crystal-clear, water-white optical glass, Opteka lenses are ground and polished to a precise precision.

Opteka lenses put more creative control where it belongs - in your hands. Remember "Your pictures are only as good as the glass in your lens!"

Wait until you try that thing before you insult that Tamron. Once I saw what an Opteka lens could do I understood where all that recycled coke bottle glass went to.

>>276836

f/16 on the long end (which is what you'd presumably want that monster paperweight for). Then you get to add the 2x teleconvertor that they often package with it and lose another two stops of light. Oh my...

Alright. Enough about the despicable creation that is the optreka... I need you guys to impart your considerable collective knowledge to me with regards to my lense dilemma!

Having decided that I'm gonna stick with the 10D I basicly need to decide on two lenses to buy. One long for Surf/nature and one short for general /p/hotography and possibly some macro work. realistic buget...£1000 (wish it was 10 times that)

Just to be clear: £1000 and you must buy two lenses with that £1000?
>> tizzou !!HuouSd+PYUs
I think you should rent a 40D and use it with your lenses and see if the focusing/tracking imrpoves; if not get EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
>>276869
Well I would say 300mm f4

However if you don't want to just buy the one lens then
Tamron 90mm f2.8 for macro work (Cheap and very very good)

Sigma 50-500 HSM for Surfing photo's, Quality is superior to your Tamron 200-400 from the images of yours i've seen. And Its very cheap used (because the 150-500 and 80-400 OS lenses that came out)
However, heres my disclaimer, I sold my 50-500 the minute I picked up my Nikon 300mm f4 af-s. And I use the 300mm for widlife shots.
>> Anonymous
>>276873yes I know. Not ideal huh

>>276881good plan. A mate has a 30D I could try it out on. 400mm F2.8? think that might be a touch out of my price range! did you mean the 400 mm F5.6?
>> tizzou !!HuouSd+PYUs
>>276889

No, I meant what I said. What is the most you can pay/how much do you have to spend?
>> Anonymous
about £1000
>> tizzou !!HuouSd+PYUs
>>276896
Ok, borrow your friend's 30D (if you can find a 40/50D, all the better) and givie it a test run with your lens. If you find it better, upgrade you body. If it still didn't improve, get the 100-400L you mentioned.

Or, if you're willing to lose the 4.0 and the wider end, get a 70-200l f2.8 and a 2x converter. This is nice because you get 140-400 as well as 70-200 (although I don't know how good of quality the converter is).
>> Anonymous
>>276899I think that is what I will be doing, pretty sure this is a lens not body issue.
I've thought about the 70-200 mm option here but the 2x tc doesn't allow autofocus which makes it hard to track animals etc.

back the original 300mm f4 vs 100-400mm showdown
the versitlilty of the zoom is certainly atractive.

Thanks /p/ your proving very usefull! I've jsut moved to the arse end of beyond and the nearest camera shop to ask advice in is probably miles away!
>> Anonymous
why not get a new canikon body and the sigma 100-300/4?
