NIKON D40 vs PENTAX K100D pixle !YlHXuPBxBQ
The "ultimate" challenge.

Which would you consider best? If you had to make a choice, which would you choose?

Why?

Be as explicit as possible seeing as I have had this doubt for quite a while now due to all the reviews I have seen on both cameras.

All opinions are welcome and/or photos taken by both cameras for comparison.

Thank you.

d40 or d40x???

i want to buy a d40x but havent seen many examples of what it can do. can some people show me some examples???
>> elf_man
As far as picture quality goes, the d40x just has more megapixels.
>> pixle !YlHXuPBxBQ
>>55371
this is true.
d40x just has 10MP instead of 6.1MP, and unless you want to make huge prints there's no point in spending hundreds of dollars more for just 4MP extra when MP are just a myth when it comes to image quality.

Other than that, D40 = D40x.

D40.

>>MP are just a myth when it comes to image quality.

not so. there are so many variables to this argument that its not possible to list them. Sensor type, size..etc..etc

can someone post some pics from the d40 and/or the d40x. at the moment in europe nikon are offering £60($180) off the price of any d40 OR d40x. it would make the d40 stupidly cheap so im all for getting one if it is only a little different MP wise......i do print large though...is it worh the extra money?????

Trust me, it's exactly the same except for the MP.

You can check and compare the details here:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=nikon_d40%2Cnikon_d40
x&show=all

Other than the MP the sensor 0.1mm larger (WOW, A LOT HUH?) and instead of 2.5fps you can shoot 3fps and that's it!

>>55434

oh im not talking about just the d40 and the d40x....maybe you were, being really speciffic...meh misunderstanding.

>>MP are just a myth when it comes to image quality

cus what you just said is bollocks when applied to ALL sensors and cameras.....do you see?

Other differences d40x from d40:
lower base ISO sensitivity (100 vs 200 on d40), and lower flash sync speed (1/200 vs 1/500 on d40)

hay guys
not to derail the thread or anything, but nikon's giving away D40s.

You can enter once a day, it kind of sucks that you have to poke around to "find" the d40 but I guess it's worth it for the chance to get something free.

Don't buy the d40. it's waste of your time and money.

it's garbage.

If you want a nikon get a used d70 or d50. It will do everything you want it to do, and it will work better than the d40.

The pentax i've never touched.

If you can afford all af-s / hsm lenses the D40 is awesome, don't be a tool
>> Anonymous
I would only buy either for the reverse compatability with older, manual focus lenses. In this regard the Pentax is far superior.

WRT autofocus, Canon has both beaten, hands down. Every Canon EF lens working on every EF mount camera, ever made? count me in.
(Oh, and EF-S lenses are not EF mount. They are EF-S. Duh. Still, every EF lens works on EF-S mount cameras. W00t.)

i just read a good review of the d40, and my friend has one. I have personally used the pentax 100d and there is nothing much wrong with it, it is an excellent slr, however I personally like nikon lenses more, but you will probably be upgrading the lens anyway. frankly i would say go either for the d40x, or just the d40.
Pentax for me, is that great, but yeah.
obviously read up a lot of reviews of both, preferably from the same magazine or website.

I'm using a Nikon D40 (my first DSLR) and I'm completely fine with it so far.

3fps vs 2.5fps is nothing to sneeze at. I've spent oodles of time with my (3fps) Digital Rebel XTi, and whenever I've tried a D40, it's felt ass-slow.

I actually got a chance to play with a D40 the other day, the viewfinder is pretty nice. It also had a feature that I wish my D70 had, live match "needle" metering on the back LCD. It's big and easy to read, too.

Seriously though, the shake reduction on the Pentax is a major plus, not to mention the fact that every K-mount and M42 screw-mount (with adapter) will work on it, meaning cheap glass on ebay. Those two kinda help it to overshadow the D40, but it depends if you need the extra 4 mp to compare it to the D40x.

That's the difference between 3008 x 2000 and 3872 x 2592.
>> pixle !YlHXuPBxBQ
>>55806
Seriously, no one really needs 3872 x 2592 pictures unless you want to make a huge ad or whatever. You can print A3 pictures with excellen quality with a 6MP.

Oh, and the anti-dust system can be very handy as well.

Would be even better if it worked.

Not quite. This camera features the crippled KAF2 mount (autofocus and auto zoom), but lacks the means to "know" the aperature at anything else other than the automatic setting.

Now why did Pentax cripple the Kaf2 mount, I don't know... I've got an SF-1 (SF-X), and it's pretty awesome to me.

well for a start everyone on my photography course at college. so thats about 90 for the three different years....then the 100 or so that are on the photo journalism course ...then the other 100 or so on the fashion photography course. We print at a1/a0 so yeah lots of ppl do. the technology to print that large exists because ppl want it.

granted, not every print i make is that big.
