So /p/, how would one go about getting into photography? Is it an expensive hobby? What do you recommend in terms of cameras?

Utter noob here. Please be kind.

photography as a hobby is expensive compared to, say, fishing or drawing, but dirt cheap compared to cars. digital has made it a much cheaper and more accessible hobby than it had been with film.

go buy a canon powershot a570 IS. 140 bucks on amazon.

these are the kind of photos it can take. once you feel that you've outgrown your camera, move up to a dslr. by that time, they'll be cheaper and better than the current lineup.

Any camera will do for something.

You want specific instructions? Buy any digital SLR with a 28mm lens if it's not a 1Ds Canon, 5D Canon, or Nikon D3. If it is, buy a 50mm lens.

Take pictures of whatever interests you.

Dude, whatever you want. Just experiment and have fun. Get a light SLR (lets you set shutter speed, aperature, etc.) and pick up a book.

OR you can get a little point and shoot and get creative with your shots... Everyone here will make fun of you though (cause you'll probably suck and will still know nothing about photography), but it's cool.

Get a camera, start taking pictures.

>Is it an expensive hobby?
It can be, especially if you fall in to the gear whore trap, but it doesn't have to be.

>What do you recommend in terms of cameras?
That's highly dependent on what you want and what you want to spend. My general recommendation is any manual 35mm SLR camera with a built in meter. Good choices in that category would be Nikon FM/FA/FE, Pentax K1000, Canon A-1/AE-1/AE-1p, Yashica FX-1/2/3, or just about anything else in the same category.

Thanks for this, guys. Camera specifics go right over my head.

Oh, that I don't really mind. I'm out to experiment and have fun.

Just a reliable, all-purpose camera, really.
