congrats on the camera, you probably should learn how to focus it though!

we dont care. and i sure hope that really is the first picture and you just got it used, because after 654 picture id hope youd have learned to focus.

manual with -1 EV?
>> Anonymous
at a focal length of 270mm you need at least a 1/270 second exposure, especially since you shot at such a small aperture and your noob hands are shaky as shit.
>> Anonymous
Thank you for the comments. I lurked here for a long ass time, and find the harsh comments more useful than the "I like it, but..." comments I would find on other sites like Deviant Art.

Anon, give me your help on this shit. I'll keep posting more stuff so I can get some kind of critique.
>> Anonymous
Yeah, nice camera. just make sure your shutter speed is around at least 1/(focal length) it's a good way to estimate how fast you should shoot. You should pick up a 50mm f1.8, they're less than $100 and will give you amazing picture quality. Stay away from zooms when you're learning. You'll learn how to use your camera much better on a prime.
>> Anonymous
>>93657
Manual with EV adjusts the meter, not the exposure.

Pfft. I've gotten reasonably sharp photos with 300mm 1/40. No vr.
>> Macheath !8b4g0BkNZg
>>93660
Actually, if you're going by that rule, you have t take into account the 1.6x crop. That means a shutter speed of upwards of 1/400.

OP here.

Yeah, I picked up the 50mm f/1.8 II already, I think I'll take your advice and just use the prime at first instead of my other zoom lenses.

Currently, I have the Rebel XTi plus these lenses:

EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III
EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II (Kit lens)
EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Just shoot with the prime for awhile? It cost me 40 bucks. Is it a good price?

$40 for a 50/1.8 II is a great deal. They usually sell for around twice that.
>> Anonymous
>>93778

Of course I wouldn't pay more than $40 from a disposable lens like 50mm 1.8 II
>> Anonymous
>>93784
Fuck disposable, the Canon 50/1.8 mkII is plastic and not that well built but it'll last a decade or more if handled with any degree of care and is quantifiably the sharpest lens most photographers will ever use. It's the bargain of the century at $40, it's cheap at $400, it'd be worth considering at $800.

I've seen the negatives and RAW files with my own eyes of a comparison between the el-cheapo 50/1.8 and Canon's L series zooms, vintage Leica and Zeiss lenses and the best Mamiya and Hasselblad had to offer. The 50/1.8 on a 1DsMkII consistently trounced everything it came up against with the exception of a top-end digital Hasselblad rig worth the best part of $60,000.

That cheap plastic lump is the apogee of decades of research into optics.

I like the 50mm 1.8 as much as the next guy, but I think you're taking it a step or two farther than needed right there.

Tripod, patience, and a steady hand. A shutter remote helps too with this type of shot.

With water the longer the exposure the better, it makes it look like still ice.

Get your ISO as low as possible, reduces noise build up also gets you longer shutter speeds.

A SOLID tripod is necessity or rest it on something flat.

A remote will be needed for speeds above 30' using mirror lock up is also great, but not all cameras have the function... my doesn't.... bah...

wish i could afford a remote to excute the exact time, usually i calculate the correct exposure before putting on an ND filter to give it longer shutter speeds.

lrn2/accept the idiom of the particular message board to which you're posting.

The reason your EXIF doesn't show up is you're saving it incorrectly. There's a "save for web" option or something like that which eats EXIF, so you shouldn't be using that. I can't really explain it more thoroughly than that because I don't use Photoshop. My point is just that the 'lrn2/shop' commenter knew what he and/or she was talking about.

Since when was myspace/xanga talk the norm for /p/?

The reason why it's not showing up is that i use Acdsee to resize and i can't get it to keep exif data. CS 2 on the other hand is fine, i don't use save for web. So thanks for nothing.

The key to remember is that that sort of writing is generally used ironically here. In other contexts, I would never abbreviate it, but it's just the 4chan dialect of English, just like 'moar' or 'pamcaek' or 'xboxhueg'.

I love thisd place. Geez.

Lens hood or remote. Which should I buy? I have a nice tripod from Bogen Manfrotto already, so I think I'll try to get one of those awesome city shots, except I would have to be in East St. Louis to get one of those...
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
>>93919
A decent lense hood will save your glass when you bump into something rather harder than you thought, its much more usefull than a uv filter for protecting your glass. A remote will help you with long exposures and tripod shots.

If you're out and about taking photos get a hood (i want metal ones..) but if you prefer shooting buildings and nature, get the remote.

OR GET BOTH.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>93919
One of the keys to taking good photographs is developing the ability to get good photos in boring-ass locations.

(In b4 "ac can't take good photographs")

That being said, there are a lot of great places to take pictures in regular St. Louis, too. St. Louis University, for instance, is absolutely full of hot chicks.
>> Anonymous
>>93919

A lens hood is something I'd consider a must have most of the time. You can get the official ones or you can buy various compatible ones that directly copy the official one for a fraction of the cost or you can get one of the other types like the folding rubber hoods. I've heard of them saving a lens from a drop and bumps and scrapes.

You can get generic hoods and remotes very cheaply.
>> Anonymous
I'm on a budget, so its either or, for now. Well, I AM a brand whore and must get over it, but I think the lens hood would be better for now.

St. Louis University? Have hot chicks? Really? I need to take a trip down grand and see for myself. I was going to go to WashU and ogle the architecture.
>> Anonymous
>>93935

Then you need to stop being a brand whore. Who pay ten times the amount for the exact same thing? Some of Canon's own brand accessories are worse than the cheaper third party options.

Right now, I'm about a half hour east of St. Louis at my parents' house. I didn't. By the time I got into photography, I had already had some marksmanship training (way back in the boy scouts, but the lessons stayed with me). Whether you're shooting with bullets or shooting with a camera, technique's about the same.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s

agree! Less chicken wings more stable support.

Considering I practice holding a 6kg rifle at eye level, holding my weightless camera at the same place is pretty easy.

It happens a lot.. Two of us that go shooting are also photographers (the other is a ex mag race photographer.. proo~) so when we are talking about shooting in the rifle club room people look at us strangely.

My favourite way of seeing someone hold a camera is not chicken wings, but at arms length and looking at the screen on the back of the camera while the whole apparatus wobbles like a drunk standing on a barstool. This is done Even with SLR-likes and SLRs. Ah-ha-ha. Ngggggh.

I actually have mad spacial awareness yo~ which does result in me using "off body" shooting technuiqes but I can still hold my camera steady enough for my (godlike) IS to get decent shot.

I also do it when im taking photos i cba with, the preflash illuminator on my flash = target lamp.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94662

Hahaha! Oh dear. You'd better be careful or you'll be on a terrorist suspect list. They'll claim you've been training for some attack. Talking about shooting people, or even worse, getting some nice head shots of someone probably doesn't go down well in that context. The chances for that sort of innuendo are limitless, really.

I am almost certain your phone line is being tapped by now.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94666

Thankfully I've been gifted with pretty steady hands too, which really pays off with photography. There's been times I've had to hold a camera steady after a run or sometimes during macro work and those are rather unforgiving if you've not developed a technique for holding. I don't think I'd risk anything other than close holding it to me to keep it steady in those situations if I could avoid it. Especially so in situations without IS being available.

The Sony in body IS is actually better than I expected. I recently saw a chart comparing Canon and Nikon lenses with some in body stabilisation cameras like the Sony A100. Considering the price of the A100 it's probably the best value at that price point. I think it seems to out perform the Olympus offerings which is the closest to it, I suppose.

"cba with"? You've got me with that acronym.

>>94631

How should I hold my camera properly to avoid this "Chicken Wings."

Pictures/diagrams should help. Any kind of things that I could do to get my hands not so shaky? Holding rifles and such won't look so good around my parents. My old man would kick my ass for trying to mess with all his guns.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94673

I suppose you could buy an air rifle or airsoft guns. Perhaps a wooden drill prop or even a weighted broom handle. Get whittling.
>> Butterfly !xlgRMYva6s
cba = cant be assed

They can tap my phone line, its just an adsl connection I dont even have a phone plugged into it!

Chicken wings is when you are holding a (rifle/camera) and your elbows are held high above your body in the same plane as your camera/rifle. Pick up your camera and hold it up to your eyes, then see where your arms are. You want to have them closed down by your chest and running parallel to the vertical axis of your body instead of the horizontal.

Look up Marine Corps Marksmanship information, and you will learn about such concepts as bone support and natural respiratory pause. I am an expert rifleman in the Corps, and that experience helped out a great deal when I started getting into photography.

Basically, you want your bones, not your muscles, to support the rifle/camera since tensing your muscles up makes them shake. For this, I rest my elbows against my rib cage. Also, there is a pause after you exhale but before you inhale. By elongating this pause, you can eliminate the shaking caused by your breathing, and your muscles will be at their most relaxed.

I've been able to use those two concepts along with an IS lens to create 1-2 second handheld exposures with minimal shaking.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94686

You kids and your crazy phone text and internet lingo...tsk.

Maybe they'll be able to read some of the info your posting with all the modern computer controlled systems they have. Posts about shooting people. Uh oh. I hope you look good in orange boiler suits. At least you'll get a nice tan in Cuba.

I was always advised to try to make as stable triangles as I could with my arms. With two arms supporting and the camera resting on my face/eye it stops a lot of wobble. Shooting "gangsta" style tends to yield less pleasing results. The more extreme the conditions the more effect it can have.

If you're working with tiny DOF, low light or similarly awkward situations then developing a good hold on the camera is as important as most other things in photography, I think. Although it isn't often mentioned.
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>94689

That's good advice there. I hoovered up the same tips from other marksmen talking about these things and that helped me. Controlled breathing is a handy one to remember. I found that improved my odds with the camera.

The natural reaction when people want to be steady is to tense up. It's usually not until someone who does the *other* sort of shooting or an experienced photographer explains this is wrong that it dawns on someone.
>> Anonymous
Thanks for all the tips, everyone. I noticed I was doing the whole chicken wings thing, and when I braced my arms close to my body, it felt a lot better. With breathing, I inhale, and then slowly exhale and take the shot.

This weekend I'll be going to a club and I'll be taking photos of course. Tips? Low light, tons of commotion and probably smoke and stuff. I've followed earlier poster's advice and keep the other lenses away and stick with the 50mm f/1.8 while I'm still a noob. Anything?
