A nice twist on a tired motif: what FILM SLR should a budding photog tool around with to get experience?

Theres plenty around so be creative

I've got a F5 (as the pic shows) they are wonderful, and cheap for what your getting, BUT they weigh 1.2KG dry, they are built BETTER than a tank

Something old, simple, and mechanical. I'm a big fan of the Minolta SR-T series. The Pentax K1000 is another /p/ favorite, but I have no experience with those.

You can either get an EOS or electronic Nikon, or play it old school with any of the classics - The early Pentax and Nikon are good.

Smena 8M.
If you learn to shoot good photos with THAT, you'll be prepared for anything life could throw at you.

Buy what ever you can afford. Or just get a DSLR. It'll end up being cheaper.

QFT, I have a SRT-201 (the exact same as the famous 101, just minor minor differences if you google it)

It was my mom's camera, and she bought it heavily used. She used it a lot, I'm using it a lot. Still perfectly in sync, works great. That thing is a god damn brick.

If you want to learn photography from film, get something WITHOUT auto metering, WITHOUT an accurate, multi-point light meter, WITHOUT autofocus.

You'll learn those three skills (exposure, metering without a hand-holding meter and focusing properly) and then you'll be a much better photographer.

dry weight? that's before you fill it up with oil and power-steering fluid?

lol i wouldn't be surprised, but thats without batteries or lens, it takes 8 AA's

Dont forget you dont have to stick with an old SLR, or even and SLR for that matter.
I've got high praise for a Nikon F60, they would be cheap as chips now including a lens or two.
Or even look at old(ish) japanese range finders, there were plenty made before almost all business went bust.
Also look at p&s style film cameras, old ones are great and barrels of fun, wile still been fully manual.

Pentax. They aren't ridiculously expensive like Nikon etc. Of course Nikon AI lenses rock, but... :P

It's not easy to find camera straps when you live in the middle of nowhere. I paid 5€ from the Canon one, it was new. I didn't have much choice, and its years better than the original.

tank is tank. Have you had to have the shutter serviced yet? I've been constantly on the lookout for a replacement for my FT2 and there's an F2A local to me for semi-cheaps. I'm afraid that I'm going to pick it up and end up needing to spend $pentaxk110d on repairs.

If you want an F5 but lighter, an F100 (without the battery grip, of course) is perfect. Same control layout, about half the weight.

Nikon wise, N8008s all the way.
Its a semi-pro level camera.
Light, portable, auto... supports a lot of newer lenses.

I don't think you want a pro-level SLR.
I have a F5 which... goes for $500, and at the price, just spend more money and get a DSLR.
>> angrylittleboy !wrJcGUHncE
>>76840Or even look at old(ish) japanese range finders

They're expensive for now since a lot of people have been getting into the RF craze lately. An ok Olympus RC fetches for an average of $30 a couple of months ago, but nowadays, you won't be able to get your hands on one for less than $50 (unless it's in shit condition).
