Not sure why the colors came out how they did.

They came out like that because you used outdoor balanced film indoors. Unlike digital which can change the WB on the fly, the film in your camera is balanced for one type of light. Be it sunshine or incandescents inside. When you shoot outside that you get crazy colors and have to fix them either in the dark room which you probably aren't developing in, or by scanning and fixing them in photoshop/lightroom.

Filters are the usual way of getting white balance on film.
