can you light it without flash?

I'm assuming you have either flash on/off, you could try diffusing it through something (shirt sleeve, paper, plastic, etc.)..

I say all this only because direct flash makes harsh and unnatural shadows and highlights, and you'd be better off getting your lighting another way for a solid picture.

Try using two sheets of paper. One which you put the insect on and the second one on top as a "bridge". Put the flash close to it and let TTL think about the exposure. You'll get nice even light with plenty of details and very soft shadows.

You might need to set WB manually, because normal paper usually ain't totally neutral but gives a little yellow tint.
