does anybody here have an understanding of aspect ratio?

what aspect ratio do DSLR's have, obviously when printing its 6x4, but the actual ratio much vary, as an 8MP camera will not have the same ratio as a 10MP

it was just really confusing me how they work this shit out :3

OP disregard this.

My D80's ratio is slightly off, I was lurked at canon's before and their camera's seem to have a perfect 3:2 ratio

(when you divide their resolution you get 1.5 exactly)

however with my D80 it's 1.49382716
I was just getting really confused in photoshop before when my picture wouldn't scale down to 900x600 it kept going to 900x598

also my D80 has robbed me out of some pixels, it says its 10.2 MP resolution but 3,872 × 2,592=
10 036 224

where the fucks my 163776 pixels nikon, WHERE?!

>3:2 is standard for printing
3:2 is the standard for printing 4x6 prints. Or 8x12s. Saying it's "the standard for printing" ignores 5x7s and 8x10s, which have a 5:7 or 4:5 aspect ratio, respectively.

Most DSLRs (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sony, Samsung) have a 3:2 aspect ratio (though, as mentioned below, they're sometimes off by a pixel here or there). Four Thirds DSLRs have a 4:3 aspect ratio (hence the name). Medium format DSLRs, I dunno and I'm too lazy to look it up, but I'd guess 6:4.5.

Eaten by the RAW conversion software (either on your PC or in the camera). My RAWs are as processed by ufraw are actually a little bit higher resolution than JPEGs produced by the camera. Like there are extra pixels of image at the edges that the camera throws away. I assume the Nikon does something similar.

It's okay to admit how turned on you are by my powerful intellect. It's perfectly natural and nobody could blame you for it.

Nikon has a program where they give digital cameras to poor people in underdeveloped countries in Africa. Nikon supplies the camera bodies and lenses but they get the pixels from unknowing customers in the west.

Everyone else is right so far. Manufacturers and formats stick to the same aspect ratio between different models of their cameras.

3:2 is standard for printing anything with a 3:2 ratio. Other sizes like 5x7, 8x6, 10x8, etc are cropped out of whatever the original size is. That is why you probably see people suggesting that you don't get too close to the edges, just in case you need to crop a bit from on dimension or the other for a print.
