hey /p/, this is my first post of hopefully many here, help me out.

i have an old pentax k1000, with a gemini wide-angle lens, vivitar zoom lens no. 28225767, the regular lens, and a polarizer filter for the zoom lens. i've only had to buy the polarizer filter myself, i was given the rest.

i'm aware this is an old camera, and it's very durable, so...

my question is: is it worth it to put more money into this camera (even just for a good hobby camera), or should i save up and invest in a good digital camera with analog-like functions (polarizer, cross-hatching, wide-angle, fish-eye, etc), not just what high school kids bring to keggars these days?

I like the old cameras. Right now i'm using a ZENIT M42 lens mount, old soviet camera. Best Camera I've ever used.

I've got a K1000, and I'd say, yes it's worth putting some money into. It'll take most newer lenses (as long as it's got an aperature ring, and it's not made for a digital SLR), plus, with a simple snap in adapter, most M42 lenses.

Nice thing about the K mount is, is it's backwards compatibilty.

Yes and yes. It's a great camera. But digital is coming down in price, and the cost of processing and developing film is going up. I'm using a Canon A-1. It's thirty years old and still going strong and I've taken some of my best photos with it.

I reckon you should buy what yu need to take photos with this bad boy and go nuts. I personally would just buy a fast prime in the 40-50mm range and just go nuts taking pictures. I have a fairly nice dslr and a slr but i take most of my best shots on a Minolta Al-F. Its only a cheaper rangefinder, nothing special but i'm comfortable using it and its tough and i can take it anywhere. So really find something you're comfortable using and take photos don't worry too much about hardware ay. There will always be better hardware but every set up is unique and the real diffewrence is behind the viewfinder.

For tldr:
Keep the pentax and use it.

My first camera was a nikon FE, with a 50mm F1.8 lens. Quite similar to the k1000. For a starter SLR, you can't go wrong with a k1000. Incredibly easy to use, and incredibly tough (I have seen one dropped from a first storey window and still work). Keep the k1000 and invest in it. At the same time, begin saving towards a good DSLR body which uses the pentax k mount, then you can use your current lenses with it, as well as any you may buy in the future.

K10D is a nice DSLR and, as stated, the old SLR lenses are compatible.

Keep on buying into the K system, and when you want to move into digital SLRs, you can get a Pentax or Samsung (which are just rebranded Pentaxes). The K100D and K10D are both great cameras.
