So, it looks like I'll be going on a family vacation to the southwest this summer. That means Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, etc. So far I have: D70s, 18-70 kit lens, 50mm f1.8, 28-85mm f3.5-4.5, and SB-600. I don't want to miss anything, but I can only afford one more lens, while I'm sorely lacking in both wide angle and tele.

So, what lens should I get? Let's say $500 as a rough estimate of what I have to work with.

I don't think you need a new lens truthfully.
50mm f1.8 for night shots, 18-70 for day shots. If you need wider you can take a few pics at say 24mm and stitch them together afterwards (18mm has too much barrel distortion)

Can't imagine that you would need a telephoto lens at all either.. So Basically stick with what you have..

Also I would sell the 24-85mm lens, Since you have the 18-70 you don't really need it, And I'm sure one day you will pick up a 70-300 or 70-200 lens, that will overrider the 70-85mm range you have.

PS. IF you do want a telephoto get the Nikon 70-300mm VR, its quite good quality and VR is a bonus. (And fits in your price range)

What you said about the barrel distortion is exactly the reason I was thinking about getting a Tokina 12-24. It's right at the $500 mark, and is supposed to be an excellent lens.

The 28-85 is used primarily for the macro. It's also got an aperture ring, which makes it essential for use on my old N8008s.

Ya, for the wide end thats a good choice, I have a Sigma 10-20mm and while I love the lens for a lot of reasons (Autofocus is FAST, and MF override is convenient, and 10mm is WIIIDE) It has some weaknesses, its almost never perfectly rectilinear, and you lose contrast near the edges wide open. Not a big deal for sports shooting, or landscapes (unless its late at night), But I hate having to worry about it.
