Big screen, high res, lots of AF points, the works. Like 97096 said, get one!

Don't be so hasty.

Have you looked at other entry-level offerings, OP, namely the Nikon D40, the Pentax K100D, and the Olympus E-410?

Check them all out in person at a camera store and buy the one you -like- the best, that handles best in your hands, whose viewfinder you like the best, and then the joy of photography can fill your days.

Canon, in general, means better lenses, and a kickass sensor. While the L lenses cost more than a pretty penny, the entry-level ones are actually pretty damned amazing. However, I agree with 97131. Try the others, too. I found that the Nikon D40 overall just "felt better," as in, it felt like you could club someone to death with it, but the XTi felt more like a serious SLR.

I have the Rebel (actually EOS 400d, the same DSLR without the shitty Amerikkkan marketing name) and I find it is good to learn the basics with. Does everything you need if you are a beginner.

it's called "Kiss" in Japan - even worse than "Rebel"

No, at least kiss implies cuteness or whatever. It's better than, "Imma REBEL! I'm all cool 'n defiant 'n individual 'n shit for buying the bestselling DSLR 'cause it's what they had for sale at Sam's Club!"
