I see the 50mm prime mentioned pretty often around here, but never the 85mm. I'm looking at the 85mm 1.8, either from Canon or Nikon. I know it is more used for portraiture and the like but I don't see why I can't use it for other stuf. Anyone used either one? Opinions?

A 85 mm lens has too narrow FoV on digital cameras to be of much practical use except face portraits, and good 85mm lenses cost a lot more than similarly good 50mm ones. So as a digitalfag I stick to 50mm's.

both nikon and canon's are great and pretty cheap.

i would also kill someone and steal their Canon 85 1.2, and i'm a nikonfag. i would merely maim someone for their nikon 85 1.4.

Why? They're two different lenses. If he likes one and not the other, would you expect him to go out and buy a D80 just to use the lens he wants, or to buy the lens and a cheap adapter?

I actually just bought the NIkon 85mm like 30 seconds ago. I'm ecstatic, I wasn't sure about getting it. I was between that and the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 I think I made the right decision, I can't wait to get it.

OP here. I actually I'm looking at lenses and seeing which body I should buy. (i.e. I like Canon's 10-22mm and Nikon has the 18-200mm VR, etc) I'm waiting till after PMA and maybe purcharsing an Xsi or the successor to the D80. Currently using a D40, but I want to sell it and get something that actually autofocuses more than a dozen lenses.

well hes not far off.
your not going to buy it for taking landscapes other than distant ones, pano's or indoor group shots clearly due to the focal length.

85 on ff for longer portraits and the crop equiv of 135 for tigheter head/shoulders etc have generally been regarded as a versatile focal for portraits so its not a load of b/s
>> Anonymous
>>118264

Just because it's "85mm" I have to use it for portraits? The 85/1.8 finds a lot of use for sports. You can still get full body shots. Just because it's 85mm doesn't mean OMG GOTTA TAKE HEAD SHOT ONLY!

"good 85mm lenses cost a lot more than similarly good 50mm ones"

Canon's 50mm/1.4 is 300$, Canon's 85m/1.8 is 300$.

There is quite a bit of difference between 1.4 and 1.8.

Agreed. When shooting film, I loved using my 135/3.5. It was great for moderate telephoto. I used it a lot for things like taking pictures of people during plays. And there's nothing wrong with having a good portrait lens.

(Canon's 85mm f/1.8 and the 28mm f/1.8 are two of the lenses on my zomfgwant list. Maybe I'll pick those up if Congress follows through on its threats to send me a check for $600.)

Americans just can't accept two things: One, that spending extravagently isn't sustainable, and two, that being massively powerful is necessarily finite. This goes for the government and most of the citizens, on every level, from nation-state down to individual.

Some (George Soros, for instance) have made a convincing case that this is the beginning of the end of the United States as the sole dominating power in world markets.

Because they aren't that different, and using lenses on adapters is a pain in the ass because you lose aperture coupling and autofocus.

If you want to use Canon lenses, you should use a Canon body. If you want to use Nikon lenses, you should use a Nikon body. Adapters are awesome to let you use old or obscure mount lenses, but if you're using adapters to use one mainstream lens mount on a different mainstream body, you are a dipshit.

why buy a canon to use nikon lens? it seems stupid.

its not so stupid for example to use an adapter for a lens like the nikon 14-24 which is "supposedly" leagues ahead of canons 16-35.

You can't use the 14-24 with an adapter, as it lacks an aperture ring.

Even if it had an aperture ring (and was indeed "leagues" ahead of 16-35), the choice between a fully functional 16-35 and 14-24 without AF and aperture coupling is far from obvious.

There is not a big difference between 1.4 and 1.8. Nevermind that the 85/1.8 focuses faster and more accurately than the 50/1.4. TRUE USM.

Also, the point of comparing the two is to reply to "good 85mm lenses cost a lot more than similarly good 50mm ones." They both cost the same.

Because all lens designers were state-funded and made lenses without thinking of marketing - or for specific military or scientific applications. Almost none of the crazy stuff got past an experimantal batch; most widespread camera lenses on sale were made with "proven" Zeiss designs.

I suppose there's a lot of crazy lens designs in the West as well, but a much smaller proportion of them is made public.
