I advise you invest in one.

has potential.. but yes, tighten up those grafix

This is what I hate.

Here's some pointers, OP. If you're going to get into photography there's two things you need. 1 is a better camera. At the minimum one DSLR/lens kit. Second, photography is an art form. You can't just take pics that look 'cool', they need to express something both from you and for your viewer. Your photo, frankly, doesn't.

yes because only SLR's can take good shots.

I've seen PhotoShop'ers who use p&s and their shit turns out soooo cash.

who the fuck said anything about being an accomplished photographer.. not everyone taking pictures is dying to rush them home to be pp'd and sold.

Art, sure. I'm still at the point where I'm just learning the basic techniques though. I'll start adding those vignettes and shooting BW when I'm done with that.

Have one. Just didn't have it with me... Point taken though.

1. Photographs do need to do more than look cool.
2. A G7 is fine, too.

You have a tripod for a Canon powershot..?
>> Anonymous
>>151168

I fail to see the problem with that. Does having a P&S suddenly make one able to handhold long exposures?
>> Anonymous
>>151172
There's no problem with that, therefore I never mentioned a problem, I was simply surprised.

It's small and cheap. Probably too small to have worked for this shot actually. Bought it the day after I tried shooting at night for the first time.

Thanks for the tip.

Crop so that the pole is in the center of the image and rotate to make it straight(er)? Did I miss something you did or mistake its purpose?

Is there a decent free practical guide to the basics of composition online? One that isn't written by art fags who try to mystify what they do.

Look for something along the lines of the 'principles' and 'elements' of design. I can't think of anything in particular that is unique to photography in terms of composition. (IE Everybody and their brother uses/abuses rule of thirds, no MySpace photos, etc.)
