Why is there so much Nikon cock sucking in the $600~ on these forums? I've been looking at DSLRs and I do not want to get a D60, the real selection of lenses suck since it lacks auto focus with most of Nikon's lineup.

I've been seriously considering a Canon 450d as an alternative with the kit lens, I also plan on purchasing a 50mm f/1.8 lens along with the camera. Is there any reason not to do this? From what I gather the Canon has a better selection of AF lenses, better AF system, and less ISO noise.

get the canon. then never come back here

Nikons are fine, also learn to manual focus.

In addition to that there are plenty of quantaray and tamron lenses that have Nikon mounts and AF.

OP is wrong, D60 has better noise control than 450D

You're an idort. /p/ fucking hates the D40 soccer mom cam. Get the K10D on clearance instead.

Hard to focus with shitty viewfinders

correct

It's not really all that bad. The D40 and D60 have focus confirmation in the viewfinder, and the D60 even has a rangefinder focus assist function that shows you which direction you need to focus in.

At least the canon can make a fucking attempt for you.

Just got the Xsi at work and love it. The people I talked to before getting it told me to check out some Nikons and some Canons and just hold them and mess with buttons. Which ever seemed more natural is the one I should get.

This is really the only thing you should concern yourself with.

OP here, both the Nikon and Canon felt good in my hands, its really just down to the lens selection, AF is a big deal to me which is why I want to avoid Nikon's entry level.

THEN GET THE FUCKING CANON. HOW HARD WAS THAT?

Or, God forbid, get a Pentax, or an Olympus, or a Sony.

There are plenty of perfectly good lenses that will focus just fine on the D40/D60. /p/ only rages at the lack of autofocus motor because everybody here owns a cheap 50/1.8 that they love to shoot wide open so they can get "omg delicious borkay".

If you don't want a D60, then don't get a D60 -- but don't give me this BS about how there aren't enough lenses. There's a whole lot of choices.

Maybe you guys misunderstood this thread, I'm not asking for reasons to NOT get the D60, I'm asking if there are any downfalls to buying the 450d that I should know about since it doesn't seem to be a popular camera on /p/

From what I hear the kit lens is shit compared to the Nikon kit lens.

'Cause Nikon glass is superior to *other Japanese brand*.

Sounds like you already thought about it plenty. You can't really go wrong with either a Canon or a Nikon, but since some of the Canon features appeal to you (or equivalently, the Nikon's disappoint you), go with the Canon. It's just as good for most users, and will probably serve you better than an equivalent Nikon.

I also want(ed) to buy the 450D, seems like the best under $800 camera so far.

Same price as the D60, reviews seem to show it being sharper, have less ISO noise, and a better AF system.

Only drawback is getting to some of the options through the menu is a pain.

Nikon D80 > Rebel XSi, as far as under $800 kits go.

Now that the D90 is out, the D80 is on blowout. So, at this price range the D80 smokes all of them.

I would spend a little more on a canon 40D or D200 though since it's in the same situation as the D80, but much more camera. Or find 'em used!

Well according to this thread the Nikon kit lens isn't as good as the Canon, to top that off I can get an XSi and an 50mm 1.8/f lens for the price of the D80, what exactly is the D80 going to offer me for the extra money?

Also I've been meaning to ask how do the 50mm 1.8/f lenses from Nikon and Canon stack up against each other?

there are two different nikon 50mm/1.8.
there are two different canon 50mm/1.8
