Try to spend the first few moments and poses together just talking and getting him/her to loosen up in front of the camera. How professional of a model are we talking about here? And what's the shoot for, just personal portfolio building for the two of you?
Loosen him/her up, just chat while taking a few shots to see how the lighting's coming out and study your first few shots closely to see if there are any imperfections like Pentard said while chatting. Maybe even get your model to take a few shots on auto mode with your camera. The less professional she is, the more you'll need to work with her warming up to the camera.
Remember to really experiment. You're shooting digital, so you can just delete anything that doesn't come out well without wasting money. You don't want to come back with a bunch of standard "Okay, you pose and I'm going to stand in front of you and take a picture!" shots.
As far as usual gear-faggery goes, try taking a reflector along as well as a standard hot shoe-mount flash. Take a wide arrange of lenses with you from wide-angle to short tele (In before DC for tilt-shift).
