D40x Anonymous !dMYYvF5Blo
Okay, I've been looking at DSLRs...
My father thinks a D40 is good, since I have a small budget.
(He's a photographer as well.)

I recently found the D40x, and also decided on:
2x 2gb Kingston CF card (I would shot in RAW)
Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8

What else do I need that that is under 200$ in total?
I have bags, tripods, filters, and other stuff from film cameras.
I've used the lens, and its one I want.

Also attached in a photo a took not to long ago.
(Sorry, I lost the rotated copy)
Shot on expired Giant Eagle Pro Series Film ISO 400 w/ a 60mm lens.

first things first. It takes like 12 seconds to rotate a picture. Secondly, don't waste your money on the D40x, just get a D40. The D40 takes SDHC cards, not compact flash, so you can really get by with a single card. The 35-70 won't autofocus on either camera. Its a pain the the ass w/o a microprism unless you're outdoors. I spent the better part of last night trying. I recently got the 55-200 AF-S VR (the VR is important), and it rocks, except for not focusing closer than like 4 feet. Get the basic kit, 1 sandisk 4gig, and the 55-200 AF-S VR.

It takes you 12 seconds to click one button?

I'm thinking of pushing a D200 then.
I really have no money for a D300.

I've used the 35-70, its perfect for me...

About VR,
I doubt many here have used it...
But I used Nikon's new 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lens.
kickass.

The 55-200 is an external zoom, right?
I want either a push/pull or internal zoom.

The 35-70 is a great lens, it was meant to be part of the trinity with 17-35mm (or the old 20-35mm) and the 70-200mm

It's AF so not having autofocus on the D40 will be a pain, a solution is obviously getting a D50 or a D70s. But if you're happy to manual focus, it's all good.

Why the facination with pull/push?

The 55-200 is an external. Most internal zooms are pro (read as: expensive).

what about the 24-85 f/2.8 - f/4? a friend recently got one and is in love with it. has 1:2 macro capability too i believe.

Now when you decided that the 35-70 was perfect for you, were you shooting on film? Because if so, keep in mind the DX crop factor. The 35-70 will work like a 52.5-105mm on all but Nikon's flagship digital SLR.

Why not just get a Nikon D80 (or, better yet, a Pentax K10D)?
