Haha it's that awesome eh? But I like how the second one only has one guy. But the trees look bigger in the first one...
can't decide!

Also, there's a local photography contest, a very small one, and the subject has to be something to do with local waterways...could I win it?

from the thumbnails they are both overwhelmingly busy with the trees. it completely distracts you from the other corner of the picture. i dont think i like either because its just too busy. i only looked at the thumbnails though because i dont feel like waiting for it to load. 4chan's servers are slow today.

But this was sort of done on purpose. I was trying to make the trees the focus, and making them look as gigantic as possible. And in effect, making the people look really tiny. That was what I was going for.
But I guess it didn't work?

yeah, theres a difference between focus and overwhelmingly busy. the trees dont really make a good subject for photos like these because of the way they are cluttered like that, really.

I really just don't even see what your seeing.
If I ever get a shot like it again next time I'll shoot from closer to the ground, making the horizon higher and making the trees look even bigger...I think.

I prefer the second one... Though I don't like the people in the picture, they bug me. Can you achieve the same conditions?

Yeah it's down the street from my house :)
But without the people I think it's boring cause there's no frame of reference. I've done that kind of shot before. I don't feel like uploading them though...

I changed my mind. I dug through a few hundred pics (I sorted them by "hikes") and I was suprised to see that of all the photos I take I rarely shoot that spot because I'm so used to seeing it. This is the last time before the OP that I shot this spot, and it's not very good.

Go back and shoot that scene at a different time of day.

With the lighting conditions you've got in these shots, the not-tree area where you can see the sky is completely washed out, which has the added disadvantage that it bleeds over on the branches that are against that sky. Go back and take it in the early morning, starting before sunrise so you can make sure to get the shot with the best light. Or do sunset. Ideally, do both and get the best of 'em.

These trees could make an excellent subject, but they have to be properly lit.

See if you can bribe a friend to come along to provide a scale reference for you. Offer bribes.
