I figured that everyone in /p/ knows how to professionally critique a painting/picture and I couldn't find anything on google to help me out... Anyone know of a good website or mind posting the steps for a good critique? Please?

Seriously, you couldn't just upload some crap from ANY digital camera or even a crappy webcam? Seriously, a picture of a water bottle from your cell phone camera would have been less egregious.

But I'll humor you because you're clearly lost. No, there are no steps to critiquing that can be labeled "valid" by any standard. That's like reading a wiki on how to like things more or less. Just try to be conscious of why certain things appeal to you. Is it the color? the composition, the action in the shot, something unorthodox done with the scene? When you're conscious of every detail, then you'll be a good critic.

PS: Seriously.

websites are bullshit. just get a book on photography criticism. one chapter will teach you more than one whole year on a forum full of average photographers. imagine what a whole book will do.

Sure there are. If you want to see metrics in action, the best thing to do would be to attend a local competition. Especially if it's at a smallish club rather than a gallery or conference. Experienced judges at small venues will almost always go through specific reasons why something is good or not. As well as mentioning their particular biases before or during the process. How important or creative a piece is almost always a seperate, hopefully equally weighted, scale during critique.

I think a lot of younger folks on interbutts haven't ever gone out and attended any of these kinds of things, so everyone is very obsessed with technical merit. Anyone who is even moderately interested in photography, as a hobby, even; I'd really suggest looking into local photography or art clubs/groups in your area.
