Got sick of procrastinating and bought myself one of these.

All I hear is good things. I've also acquired a 1.4x teleconverter which essentially means I'm able to shoot at 280mm. Praise me.

not op, but ive got one. i love this lens for outdoors. its a little slow to be used indoors though. its a little cheap feeling when you start zooming, but im not expecting nikon's best build quality in a consumer level lens like this. the VR is nice for when you need a little extra help in a pinch and the focusing the fast, smooth, and no seeking. the color and contrast i get is pretty awesome and i havent seen any ghosting.

summary: i love this lens when theres enough light to use it. i pretty much either use this lens or my 50mm prime.

It's a great lens for when you can't carry anything else with you and it's a solid all-around performer, but not the life-changing Jesus lens that people claim it is.

Also, LOL Ken Rockwell.

I have one as well. It works great as a jack-of-all-trades type lens. I don't have any others at the moment, but I doubt it would be all that awesome if you already had solid performers.

It's a nice lens. It can't compare to fast primes or pro quality zooms, but then again it isn't a pro lens. I'm starting to acquire some fast primes, and will probably replace this lens with a 70-200mm VR f/2.8 and either 17-55mm f/2.8 (if I want DX) or 17-35mm f/2.8 (if I want full frame coverage).

It is what it is: a convenient lens.

As far as using a teleconverter with a variable aperture lens such as this: enjoy your AF hunting.
