Found myself unexpectedly at a Christmas parade the other day, in the rain. After figuring out how to hold my umbrella by hooking the handle through the strap of my camera bag, I took some pictures.

Was waiting for my Ektar thread to drop off to post these. You should all follow my example and repopulate /p/ with photo threads. But, ideally, better ones than this.

Lighting was less than ideal, obviously, it being rainy and nighttime. And I was trying to avoid blocking the view of little wet children trying to see the little wet parade, which limited my compositional options somewhat.

I pity anyone who actually had an emergency during this. I'm pretty sure all of the ambulances and fire engines and police cars in the county were participating in the parade. On the plus side, if someone *did* have their house catch on fire, they might be cheered by the festive Christmas decorations festooning the truck when it showed up.

While I was taking this picture, a teenage girl was trying to convince a teenage boy to go grab some of the candy that the passing floats had been tossing out for the kids. He didn't want to for fear of getting hit by one of the subsequent floats. I considered pointing out that the floats were moving at about 5mph and that therefore he was a complete pussy, but I'm also a complete pussy, so I decided to stay out of the argument.

>i know i wouldn't have been able to get one exposure that wasn't blurry, dark or noisy as fuck.
1. Set your camera for M. Your meter's going to try to get things up to 18% gray, and that's going to require longer shutter speeds than you can deal with. Accept that the pictures will be dark.
2. Fast prime lens. I was shooting at f/2 for all of these.
3. Concentrate on good handholding technique. No chicken arms, exhale before shooting, hold the camera with both hands, etc. For most of these, I was shooting around 1/50th with a 50mm lens on a crop sensor
4. Look for subjects near what few light sources there are and subjects that are holding reasonably still
5. Don't be afraid of ISO800 on a DSLR.

Bokeh does not make a photo good. It isn't a subject and should not be treated as one. True... out of focus does contribute to the way an image would like to be felt, as in the mood and so forth. However, when the majority of your effort is put into background effects, floating spheres, swirly flowers and portraits of the back of people's heads... expression is limited to technique. The same goes for contrast. Examine the work of old masters of photography. Subtle photos deserve subtle treatment. Messing up the white balance rarely makes an image work good. If you want a good picture have white whites. The images posted on this board are gimmicky at best, if there are images posted at all. You all talk more about gear that actual images. You are more focused on "putting lipstick on a pig" with photoshop than taking a good picture out of the camera. I suggest you heed what I am saying if you ever want to make it somewhere in the realm of professional photography. You can use this thread to discuss what I am saying or post some of your favorite professionals work.

Christmas parade? It's not even December.

>ac must be following heavyweather's footsteps
I am, actually. I'm a big fan of his work, and I try to learn how photographers I like get their results.

>shitty snapshots with bokeh = instant art
Incidentally, 'bokeh' doesn't mean 'shallow depth of field' like you seem to think it does.

>Christmas parade? It's not even December.
Yeah, that struck me as odd too. But then I realized, it's upstate New York. If they had the Christmas parade in December, there would be a strong possibility that people coming out to see it would freeze, fall over, and dramatically shatter into a million pieces. Then the street would smell terrible when all of the chunks thawed come springtime.

Hey, if they don't have the commitment to last out the cold for the Christmas parade then they don't deserve anything from Santa. That poor guy has to work through the worst of it on an all-night shift and they're complaining about a little time out to stand around and enjoy a parade? Pffffft.

Is this better?

Borkeh does not make a photo good. Borkeh is not the central subject and should not be treated as one. While it is true that out of focus sections of an image contribute to the mood and feeling of the piece, the majority of your effort is put into background effects, floating spheres, swirly flowers and portraits of the back of people's heads. A single technique yields a single expression. The same goes for contrast. Examine the work of old masters of photography. Subtle photos deserve subtle treatment. Messing up the white balance rarely makes an image work well. Correct color that has vibrance or saturation tweaks are always better than incorrect white balance. The images posted on this board are gimmicky at best, if there are images posted at all. You all talk more about gear that actual images. You are more focused on "putting lipstick on a pig" with photoshop than taking a good pictures in the first place. I suggest you heed what I am saying if you ever want to make it somewhere in the realm of professional photography. Yes. Although I don't see how it applies to my photos. The shallow DoF was mandated by the lighting conditions, and the photoshopping consisted of correcting WB, small amount of levels/curves so I didn't completely lose most of the image in shadows, and unsharp mask.
>> Martin !!ve2Q1ETWmJH
Ooo I like these ac, Its good to see you're improving with every set you display. You're progress is obvious aswell, especially when you compare them to the mundane shitsnaps that you used to produce. (no offence ment & inb4 chin.jpg)

They sorta' remind me of the heavyweather (correct me if i'm wrong) series he shot of that girl with a video camera? or something along them lines. The pink-ish colour tones etc.

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Well, we could both drive 3 hours and meet in the middle somewhere. If nothing else, it'd put us somewhere we've probably never been before which could lead to some interesting pictures.

On the other hand, 3 hours worth of driving is a lot when it's unlikely to result in intercourse at the end.

I say everyone heads towards the west coast. Its so much better over here :)

Also, if you get enough people together everyone will just start jerking it to their gear. Then intercourse is irrelevant
