A2/EOS 5. You can get one used from KEH.com for like, fifty bucks.

What kind of stuff are you planning to use it for?

fucking win. Better than any of the XX series stuff and has better build + spot.

Thought, okto, I wouldn't touch the A2/A2E. Neither has a good manual meter. It just has a shitty <+ | -> thing. Might as well use a Pentax or something.

An Elan II is a good choice, but with the weight, might as well get the EOS 5.

It's really a choice between whether you want spot metering or not. You can get any of the Elan series or the EOS 5 for your price range. Avoid XXX/Rebels like the plague. I can't even sell my Rebel 2000.

They have a standard exposure scale showing +/- 3 or 5 stops (I can't remember which at the moment) like almost every other modern camera out there. What better kind of meter would you want?

The EOS 5 is exactly the same camera as the A2E, it was just sold under the EOS 5 name outside the US.

>The EOS 5 is exactly the same camera as the A2E, it was just sold under the EOS 5 name outside the US.

false.

There's a reason I bought an EOS 5 instead of an A2E. Here's a quote "Because of delays in this licensing, they produced the USA-only model Canon EOS A2 prior to the resolution of the licensing problems, and later introduced the EOS A2E when these problems were worked out. Next, the author further explained: ...the omission of digital display in the EOS-A2E when operates in manual mode.... the answer lies in international patents and the licensing of them. These features are covered by US patents owned by other manufacturers who refused to license them to Canon for the USA."

The features they are talking about is the sliding scale metering thing inside your viewfinder that tells you what your EV is(light level whatever)

Look it up. EOS 5 != A2E.

When you switch to manual mode in the A2E, you loose any ability to meter properly. If you read my post, I wouldn't have to repeat myself.

also, look this up in the photo.net archives.

I owned an A2 and don't remember any "omission of the digital display." The one I had showed an exposure scale, both on the LCD and in the viewfinder, in all exposure modes except automatics. I never had any inability to "meter properly."

True, I forgot to mention that. KEH never seems to have EOS 5s though, just A2s.

You either remember incorrectly, or had a camera that had somehow been flashed with EOS 5 firmware.

The people that made the camera say they're different, so there's really no arguing this point.

I bought the Rebel GII for $110 NEW back in 2004. They don't make this cheap-ass camera anymore. Three auto-focus points. Max shutter speed of 1/2000. 90% viewfinder coverage. But load this dude up with Velvia film and DAMN! I loved this camera. I have a 5D now, but I still miss the simple times.

This is exactly what I meant: the A2 has a plus-minus exposure display, instead of the BAR GRAPH (confusing, I know, I'll explain what it is later) that the EOS 5 has.

get a fucking AE-1 Cannon (program preferred)... it's a fucking good 35mm, and drop the entire EOS deal unless you're serious about photography and no what you are doing... An AE-1 is awesome, affordable, and the lenses are very cheap, since it is a lot older... I bought a used 200mm set 2.8 for $99; and something like that for my 5d would cost over a grand, and film quality is still better... Go with an AE-1 program. It's a great camera.

still... you'll save a lot more money going with the AE-1.. I spent less than $300 on a AE-1 body with 50mm, 24mm (2.8apt), 200mm lenses (2.8apt)... for the EF series of those lenses... That would cost over 2.3 thousand dollars..

also... +1 for the fail post

I actually have a 50mm 1.4 and a 24-105L for ef. I do have an ae-1, but i'd rather use my nicer lenses for film. a2e a good bet?
>> Anonymous
>>209617
We just beat that horse and buried it buddy. Read the fucking thread.
If you want an a2e, buy an EOS 5 instead. It's a simple substitution if you want to meter manually.

Also, before I forget, the dial on the EOS5/A2/E has a tendency(read almost always) breaks and falls off. Hopefully you'll get one that's already been repaired.
>> Anonymous
50mm 1.4 and a 24-105L
50mm 1.4 is nice, but I'm not a big fan of the 50 mm... But it has a nice apt, not going to lie..
But I bet the 24mm-105mm is not so great, what's the apt on it? I bet it's a 3.5-5.6 (if so) your best bet is to still go with the AE-1... Just because how cheap the good lenses are.. I fucking have an EF 24mm-70mm set 2.8 on my 5d, but I hate switching lenses (hate getting dust on the sensor)... that lens was expensive as hell, and it's fucking great, but I only want to use it one my digital body.. and with the AE-1 you can be a lot more careless with your camera, by that I mean, when you are moving around, shooting all the time, it's easy to hit dent it up (though my 5d is my baby, and it has yet to be hurt, the ae-1 is still fun to shoot on)
>> Anonymous
>>209623
He wants to use his EF lenses. Let him. The EF 50/1.4 is almost certainly better than any 50/1.4 for FD mount.

Also, fail for trying to talk someone into buying a non-professional manual focus film body. A-1s, F2s, etc. run cheap enough these days it's stupid to buy a consumer model like the AE-1.
>> Anonymous
You failed... When it comes down to it, it's not the body or the lens that makes you a "professional" photographer... He obviously isn't buying a camera for "professional" use, because he doesn't know what he wants, so he asks the /b/ for advice.. I gave him my advice... From a professional stand point.. I think people learn how to use a camera better when they are forced to use the manual functions on the camera, the AE-1 allows you to be more intimate with the camera.. He obviously has a budget (VIA the $100 body) so his best bet is to go for the AE-1... Because of the fact that he can get good lenses with it.. And when it comes down to it...There's more to a photo than the body and the lens, even though they do help; if you have shitty composition, don't understand what the apt or shutter is, don't know how to use leading lines, Depth of Field... and so forth.. You'll always suck, so maybe you should read up on photography man, because apparently your "PROFESSIONAL" cameras have failed you.. lol

>>209631
op here, i already said that i have an ae-1 but i have nicer ef lenses, so i want an ef body. btw, the 24-105L is an f4.

If possible, what are the top three eos bodies in this category? ($100)
>> Anonymous
>>209631
0/10.

"Professional" is just the stupid marketing term applied to the top of the line bodies. I used it because it's common parlance.

Also, why are you assuming the OP doesn't know how to photograph? He's asking about the market for film EOS bodies, which has nothing to do with photography per se.

Oh, yeah, I bet if we asked Josef Koudelka he'd be able to tell you exactly the best shop anywhere in the world to get a good deal on a film Rebel. Yeah.
