The sky is washed out, and the lighting is pretty harsh. A suggestion to remedy this is to take your pictures in the shade or in the afternoon/morning. When the sun is directly overhead it creates hard shadows which don't look good on people or most anything.

Why is this in black and white? Whats the color version look like?

I'm not much of a fan of color photography, there are tons of exceptions, but I just prefer to use black and white.

Thanks for the criticism! It'll help.

Don't take photos at noon since the lighting is going to put the whole face in shadow. If you have to shoot mid day use a bounce card (a reflector or a white piece of cardboard even) or a flash to add light into the face. E-mail me if you need more help me@daviswoody.com

IMO, harsh lighting can often be quite good, like here. Soft light is flattering, but harsh light can give a shot a surreal or otherwise more expressive look sometimes.

Op, stop defending your photo like it's a masterpiece. It gets tiresome, when every crit has some sort of opinionated retort.

Now on with the problems.
Black and white: It fails because there's only highlights and very few shadows/dark. A good photo generally has a balance of both.

Mergers: (Mergers happen to be bad for the most part.) The tree is merging with his head in the background, since the values are so close together, and also because it's right behind his head. I'm sure you've seen exaggerated examples of what I'm talking about.

Now What I would of done after I saw this photo and I had taken it is, change the point of view or walk further down the street, and underexpose the photo maybe an f-stop or so.

duh, black and white = instant art

>>67810here, not the OP. The background throws the picture some, but the harsh lighting and composition of the foreground are pretty good.

>A good photo generally has a balance of both.

Generally, yes, that's true. But just like the rule of thirds or that direct flash is bad or that portraits should be done with a telephoto, it's not always true.

Oh, and how is the OP defending himself in>>67792?

He just states he prefers to work in black and white, which many people do. And honestly, could you see this photo being in color?

And then he thanks the poster for his criticism, with a damned exclamation point, no less.

What gets tiresome is people like you assuming that anyone who finds a good point in a flawed photo is the OP, and people like you who view someone trying to have a dialogue over their work as making "opinionated retort" and "defending" it.

Harsh lighting can be good, yes. But here, it's just amateurishly putting his whole head in shadow. And while I'm in scathing-criticism mode, there's way more blank, boring, blown-out white sky in this picture than there needs to be. And also, 2.27MB for a black and white? We don't need to see your friend's individual pores. Resize it to less than 1024x1024 before posting, please.
