hey /p/
I'm looking to buy my first DSLR, either the nikon d40 or d60.
Some say the d60 isn't that much better so I should get the d40 and spend the price difference on another lens or a flash or something.
Can anyone who's used both comment on this dilemma?
(also, inb4 flame for some unpredictable reason)

a D40 would be fine, but if you ever get serious, you'll definitely feel like you're playing with a toy.

might as well get a D80 and learn how to use it, if you can front the dollars

but wont another lens/flash give me more to play/learn with?
If I get a d80 like u suggest i'll still have 35-50mm lens and the standard flash.
Can any recent noobs comment on what they desired more first? better body or other parts?

I have the D40. I would have waited longer to save more money and gotten a D80 but I was in a rush to get a DSLR. I went with nikon because I already have a 50mm f/1.4 lens, a flash, and need to go look in my attic for a few more fast telephoto lenses from my dad.
The D60 has no real advantage over the D40. If you get the D40 you'll have to manually focus most lenses (not much of a problem with fast primes). You'll also have to deal with a crippled AF point system. The kit lens on the D40 is good enough for most stuff but doesn't cut it for sports or portraits.
Save the money and get the D80 body if you aren't in a hurry. The D40 doesn't give you much room to develop your skills. The D60 is a D40 with more megapickels (not worth the money).

The D40 is alright for beginners, minus the shitty AF and even worse viewfinder.

I think it really depends what your going to be using it for and how serious you want to get into digital photography. The majority of the stuff i do is film but it's nice to have a good dslr and i've been able to take some decent pictures with the d40 and the kit lens. In my opinion for it's price it's well worth it.

I don't have a dSLR b/c I'm such a poorfag but I've been making due pretty well with a camera that's pretty much got all the spec.s and features as an entry level dSLR, except the manual focus has to be adjusted digitally. I looked around a lot and I thought the Olympus e520 looked really good b/c it's about $550 but it's got stuff like an in body stabilizer, and auto dust removal...

pentax *ist D + some random smc pentax-A manual focus lens

really you're better off picking up a k1000 because you are forced to learn instead of relying on autofocus and auto exposure
