Lighting is very important, using a high aperture, and high ISO, and high shutter speed probably means the scene needs more light.

I, personally would've got down, level with the guy's face, that's just how I do portraits.

I'd remove the bags of garbage first if I were you.

Yeah, I do see your point.. but in a relatively dark environment, what can you do? Especially if mounting a tripod isn't an option.

I thought about it, but didn't since I didn't want the guy to move. They kind of add something to the picture, too, don't they?

That's a lame excuse and you know it.

Or else try a different shot with a different setup. If you can't change your surroundings then learn to adapt, jeez.

No. They're just distracting. As with the duct on top.

>I set my exposure compensation to -0.7 because my D40's metering firmware is defective, just like the D80's meter. It usually overexposes.

>nikon D40
>normal program

Well, I can definetely see why the guy is called crockwell, but nevertheless, he seems to know how to take a good pic from time to time.

no his D40/D80 guides are really helpful I must admit, apart from a few things, such as never use spot or center metering.

not sure about that exposure -0.7 thing though, my D80 seems to be fine.

I'm an expert rifleman in the U.S. Marine Corps. I've used all of the techniques in that article when shooting at targets from 200 to 300 meters away, and I guarantee that they work well with photography too.

In more contrasty lighting, either camera usually does better with a slight underexposure. When lighting is particularly even or low contrast, no compensation comes out exactly where it should.
However, Rockwell's warning is based on the old, original firmware for the d40. He says he has never upgraded the firmware, and it seems like recent upgrades are a lot more accurate.

Don't know, but "KINDLY IGNORE --->" is pretty damn counterproductive.
