So /P/,

whats the most hard wearing, accessible, manual camera?

What im looking for is the AK47 of Manual cameras, something that would survive "platoon".

Correct. Nikon FM2 or F2. The F2 is a better camera, but lacks built in metering (there is a metered prism available) and earlier versions won't meter with lenses lacking the meter coupling prongs. Either one would be fantastic.

For a more modern AK-47 camera, the Nikon F4s is hard to beat. It's as reliable as they get, extremely versatile, and can be used to pound nails (I've tried it, camera still works great).

It's a good camera. You should buy some Kodak Tri-X, Ilford HP5+, T-Max 100, or Delta 100 and some Fuji Velvia.

the F3 is tougher than the FM2, which is exactly the same camera as the FE2 with no circuitry inside.

so, F3 and F2.
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
though i should also mention that the fe2 and fm2 are also extremely robust camera bodies. they're just not the absolute, categorical toughest.

the minolta x-700, pentax LX, olympus om-2 and Canon T90 are all also extremely durable manual focus bodies.

The most is the Leicaflex SL2. One survived falling from a fighter jet at altitude.

But any Nikon F-series will probably hold up just as well, the all-mechanical F2 probably being the best.

i've always wondered, what's that thing on top of the lens, the metal thing that stick outs on top

It's a meter indexing tab. That's how the meters on pre-AI cameras knew what aperture the lens was set at.

>>138551

hmm, but the external part is just for us to use and turn the ring? or does it serve a function?
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
>>138530

that's a good point. i forgot about leica. leica salesmen always make it a point to literally stand on top of a camera to prove how durable they are.

so, yeah. leica wins for durability. contax is great too, though lesser known and equally expensive.

No, the external part engages a pin on the meter of cameras that aren't AI (automatic indexing). Here is a pic.

It serves no purpose on cameras that are AI compatible.

oh, i see, my nikon fg doesn't have that part, the stick thing but some of my lenses hae the metal part

so it just turns along when you change aperture so the camera knows?

there's a little tab on the outside edge of your lens mount. the lens has a little corresponding ridge on the back. the ridge pushes the tab counterclockwise. when you rotate the ridge (stop down your aperture), the tab moves along with it. that's how your camera knows what aperture it's using.

haselblads are pretty durable.

Not really.

yes, they are

buy one and jump on it, it'll work

Just don't drop it. 'Blads are great, but they aren't all that hard to knock out of whack such that they need servicing.

for the price of a single f2/fm2, you can buy a shitload of zenits and discard them or disassemble for spares when they break.
>> Lynx !!KY+lVSl0s2m
>>138979
Of you could just buy one FM2 and not have to discard a bunch of zenits or disassemble them for parts.

Vintage screw-mount Praktikas (sp?) are definitely the AK of 35 mm SLR.

If you want to go medium format, try a vintage TLR like the Yashica.

Both are very cheap and very readily available.

HTH.

F2. Batteries and electronics are for pussies.
