Film-flange distance between LTM and M mount is very close if not the same, but as you noticed the diameter is different. The M mount is substantially larger than LTM, so it would be impossible to adapt it without a whole lot of doing.
Your best bet, if you really want to use M-mount lenses, is to watch ebay and pick up a beater M2 or M3, or a Bessa R2 if you can find one for a decent price. Leitz CL or a Konica Hexar RF would also be decent options.
There are a whole lot of options in LTM though. Voigtlander makes or has recently made a bunch of fantastic lenses, and while the old Leitz lenses may not be up to par with their modern counterparts, they're still very good lenses and can usually be had relatively inexpensively. Most M lenses will run you an arm, leg, and your first born.
