its crap, dont light the coin from the top because you wont get a good image from the embossing.

and its not sharp use a larger fstop.

This is often true. Unless you've got a macro ring flash or a set up that gives you similar control. I've seen sellers and coin collectors light that way.

Light it from a few different angles to see what you get. Maybe you could try a piece of white card to reflect some light? You could have some (photography geek) fun that way. ;)

You should probably try to stop down that lens a little more. f/8 or there about usually looks better if you can. I notice you're already at ISO1600 so I'm guessing you're pressed for light as it is. You might not manage to get what you want if you stop down any more.

Maybe it's the iPod mark III he's balancing it on? :D

If he's got the camera and that table or subject rock steady it should help it look a bit sharper, especially if he shops it down. If he can trust the set up to be vibration and creep free then I'd suggest dropping the ISO too. Some of these cheapie tripods or novelty ones aren't so steady.
