Medium Format discussion thread.

I just bought my second MF camera, a Yashica D on eBay for $45 shipped. My other barely counts though, a Holga.
Anyway, post some MF pics and info on your setups.

Look into the Mamiya RB67 and Kiev 80.
>> Anonymous
>>200540
I have my doubts about russian Kievs. I was looking into a Mamiya 645, why would I pick the RB67 above it?
>> Haddock !!xREx2m9lgBs
>>200548
Format (6x4.5 Vs. 6x7) and price.
>> Anonymous
>>200548
Larger neg, but it's large and heavy, not a camera for handholding from what I've heard. I'd go with a 645 over it; if you want best quality and aren't going to be handholding anyway, go for large format.
>> Anonymous
>>200552
I will be handholding it, and already have a large format, thanks for the suggestions nonetheless.

There's hardly any reason to go with a Kiev when you can get a used Bronica SQ, ETR, or Mamiya 645 for about the same price.

>>200548
They're two totally different cameras with two totally different uses. The RB is very much a studio camera and comes close to a 4x5 field camera in size and weight. The 645 is only slightly larger than a pro 35mm SLR, and with a power winder and 90 degree prism, has about the same ergonomics for shooting handheld. On the other hand, 645 is a much smaller piece of film than 6x7.

If you're considering Mamiya 645, I would recommend the later manual-focus models (645 Super, Pro, Pro TL). They have several very useful features that the older M645 models are lacking and aren't much more expensive.

My current MF toys are a Hasselblad 500C/M, a Yashica D, and a Lubitel 2.

Pic was with the Hasselblad and 80mm CF on Ilford Delta 100.

>>200593
I'm also considering a Bronica ETR. I have a 120 back in my posession, so that makes a Bronica a little cheaper if I'll be buying it loose. Do you have any experience with it?
>> Anonymous
>>200819
I don't. I've played with the ETR a little, but haven't owned one. It seemed like a perfectly good camera. It's not as well built as a Hasselblad but comparable to Mamiya, and they were one of the main contenders for the pro wedding photog market so I'm sure they're durable enough. They're also dirt cheap, which is a pretty big advantage in and of itself.

I was considering buying one, you can find kits on KEH for ~$140 and all the seperate parts for decent prices.

I would have liked this if you didn't have so much dust on your negative, dogg.
>> Anonymous
>>201396
yeah, the camera had a mirror lock up thing and, being a novice, i thought it may have been the film messing up and getting stuck, so i opened up the back. half the film was ruined, obviously, and the rest got really dirty.
anyway, the camera seems to be behaving itself now and if it happens again i know i can sort it out without opening up the back.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>201713
Opening up the back wouldn't make the film any dirtier. But negs tend to be that dirty without any computer dust reduction, so enjoy tedious post processing or buy a better scanner (I went digital instead)
>> Anonymous
>>201738
Or just clean the negs. Canned air/microfiber/alcohol.
>> Anonymous
>>201746
Do not use alcohol to clean your negatives.
>> Anonymous
>>201753
Why not? I do it and it doesn't cause any problems.
>> Anonymous
>>201766
With B&W that is.
>> Anonymous
>>201766

Are you fucking kidding me? Alcohol will strip the emulsion right off the film. Perhaps you happened to only put it on the back (non-emulsion) side so you didn't see any issues. There is good chance it will also damage the gelatin base of the film. Organic solvents and denatured protein gelatins don't tend to get along too well. I wouldn't be surprised if your negatives started to crack and break down in a few months.

Even if there is no apparent damage, there is no reason to clean your negatives with alcohol. If they're so dirty that you can't get them clean with compressed air or a blower brush, load them onto a reel and rinse them thoroughly in water, then put them through a rinse with a wetting agent, then hang them to dry like you would with freshly processed negatives.

>>201786
I've been told and read that using 98% alcohol is fine on B&W negs. I used it to get rid of fingerprints. And yes, I've used it on both sides of my negs and that was two years ago and they are still perfect.

HOLGAJACK

How do I take a sharper Holga picture? Since the shutter is open as long as you depress the release, I guess I just have shaky hands because all my pictures come out blurry lookin'. Is there a way to mod the shutter release so it's open a standard length of time, or something? Or should I just learn to quickly release the shutter?
>> sage !i/euDJmWr2
>>201802
...take it out of Bulb mode. Your shots are still going to suck though, Holgas aren't going to take good pictures if you're not a better than average photographer.

And yes, I know you're a less than average photographer, the fact that you don't know that you're in bulb mode speaks multitudes.

I've got a Bronica SQ-Ai which is wonderful, but a little hefty.
So I also have a Ziess Super Ikonta BX, which is perfect for carrying around and gives a wonderful image quality.

I'd really like one of those 6x9 Fujis, or when that new fuji 6x7 folder comes out, Ill be all over that.
>> Haddock !!xREx2m9lgBs
>>201816
I doubt Fuji will actually bring it out, it was probably just an engineer's pet project.
>> Anonymous
>>201738
oh, sorry, i meant actually removed the film from the spools to see if anything was catching.
and then after the film was used i let someone else scan it in because i don't have a scanner yet, so the post-processing was minimal.
>> Serenar !m827jEgWi.
>>201837
Except it was on display on one of the two big photo trade shows, which means it's pretty much serious business. If they won't release it, they'll at least tease us for the next few years with the same prototype over and over again (fuck you Pentax 645D)
>> Haddock !!xREx2m9lgBs
>>202281
Yeah, I remember when it was shown, but come on, Fuji isn't stupid.
