inspiring photographers tred fence !!POey2hdozCZ
haven't had one of these threads in a while.

was at a fellow photog's house tonight and spied Nick Brandt's "on this earth" on his shelf. it was a revelation, one of those rare moments that makes you completely re-evaluate what you're working towards with a camera. wildlife photography has been done from front to back, and yet every single page in it was completely fresh. it's hard to believe that some of these photos even exist, especially in the digital age. but they do exist, and they're a monument to this guy's patience. i can't even fathom the time and number of frames it must have taken to get some of these. his style and visual grammar is complex and varied. one page will have holga-style vignettes with the too-trendy emulsion borders, and the next will be an incredible 19th-century landscape rendered in infrared. interestingly, and telling of the patience involved, he works mostly in the closest-to-normal-as-possible focal length ; there are very few images where you think "oh, well, he must have been a quarter mile away to get this shot" like you usually think with natgeo photographers and the like.

best of all, there was no mention of gear anywhere in the book (and none on his website, either). the focus was entirely on the images, which is where it should always be on the first place.

so, yeah, go check out the book if you can, but also visit his website. he's generously posted every image in the book there. it's also got up-to-date photos that were taken after the book was published, which is a big plus.

Does he have to use IR on every other image? Cool stuff but the IR ruins things.

no pics of it? that's a shame. why even bother posting on /p/ if you're going to get a blowjob from a semi-famous photographer and not take photos?

good point.

i'm not such a big fan of infrared, either, but i think brandt used it to good effect here. a lot of the romantic landscapes painted in the 19th century are so suffused with light that they almost look like they're lit from within. i think he was going for that look, and in my opinion, it works quite well.

some cool stuff in there.

every one of his pictures looks the same on that gallery. it's good, but really boring after seeing it done the same way again and again so i gave up.

Pictures of other people's weddings that I actually enjoy looking at.

He left the D70 for a D200 a long time ago, but yes, DAH favors small, unobtrusive equipment. For years he shot with just an M6 and a 35mm lens, rarely switching to 28mm or 50mm, before he went digital. Now he uses the D200 and/or the M8.

shit, brides are hot. i could see myself jacking it to this stuff in 30 years when i come to the realization that i'm too old to get married and will be alone for the remainder of my old, enfeebled life. with nary a meaningful relationship ever had, i'd feel an empty void, a life lived alone. driving without direction, i'd spend the time in silent retrospect, and quiet contemplation. upon finding a bridge of suitable height and design, i'd remove my shirt and shoes, and neatly place them on top of my parked car. i'd spend hours waiting, to see the sun slowly climbing over a forming horizon. i'd make my way over whatever fencing was placed between myself and destiny. standing on the edge, triumphant and, not in the least bit, unnerved, i'd walk out on a path set for me since birth. falling ever faster, feeling the air's sweet caress, i'd wait to feel the water's steely embrace. a death by gravity.

this day, a man dies.

Shit. He has brides showing off their butt and little underage girls in panties. I think he is a /b/tard.

Somewhere on there he says he's married himself.

No jacking off or an hero needed for him.

Those are some really great photographs; not that I think he would apply or they would end up accepting him, since it's definitely no his line, but the quality of those things is at the same level as the typical Magnum photographer's portfolio. The best of them, at least.

Why is it that wedding photographers always have X-Box hueg portfolios compared to every other type?
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Two reasons:
1. Wedding photographers potentially get paid more the more shots they take.
2. Most photographer's portfolios are of the "Here's my best work if you want to buy a print" type. Wedding photographers' portfolios are their marketing tool. You wouldn't want to hire a wedding photographer based on five or six pictures, you'd want to see that he or she can consistently take good shots.

That and the fact that you're likely to be there all day for hours on end and have hundreds of people around you, so plenty chances for photos and the minimum quoted now tends to be a hundred or two shots in this digital age. That kind of thing means lots to add to any portfolio. A lot more than taking fifty shots to get one good portrait on a day.

Its as an amazing book I have had it for a while now. First saw his work in black and white photography magazine and was completely blown away by his approach to wildlife photography. I much prefer his style to the usual stuff like that produced by Andy Rouse etc (not that they arnt good photos)

But have a fuckton of photographs inhibits it as a marketing tool. 20-50 breathtaking images right up front, versus those 20-50 with a hundred mediocre ones scattered in between runs the risk that they'll miss the good ones and pick someone else. No one wants to scroll through and load that many photographs.
