Hey /p/, I just bought a Nikon D200. I've looked into it a bit and I'm excited.

Tell me what I should expect? :]

What was your previous camera?

My previous camera was a film camera--Nikon FE2.

Love it to death.

I'm saving up for one right now. went to a shop a few days ago to test it with my older glass. Both the 50mm f/1.2 and 24mm f/2.8 worked very well on it. you can use the older lenses from your FE2 because it has an aperture coupling ring

took this in RAW, had to correct it a bit. it was on matrix metering (didnt know it could matrix with older lenses, and thought it would be center-weighted).

taken at F/2.8, manual focusing is not fantastic but it works out. mm, lol, can't remember when I last posted a photo here with an EXIF :)

OP here.

Wow, now I'm REALLY excited. The preview shots I've seen before didn't look so great, but this is certainly different.

This was something that took me a minute to find, so I figure you might want to know right away.
If you want to use the D200 like your FE2, you can change the aperture control from the command wheel to the aperture ring in one of the camera menus. This kicks the command wheel to being exposure comp. On G lenses, it just uses the command wheel, iirc.
There's also a setting to change a chord (button+wheel) into an non-cpu lens setting adjustment, so you don't have to use the menu when you change lenses. I don't remember the name off-hand because I don't own one, but it is handy.

have another

had to push the curves a lot so there would be some detail in the blacks. but the raw's are quite nice, you can change contrast a lot without too much quality loss

looks like EXIF got lost in my workflow. its taken with my 50mm f/1.2 wide open :)

Expect to get out more. A lot more.

I'm sure Nikon already corrected the problem, but it's always safe to check. If your images are coming out way to fuzzy (on 100%), check for sensor misalignment. It was a problem they had early on upon its release. Now take in mind, on the default there is barely any sharpening done, if any (the idea behind that is sharpening in-camera represents a loss of data, hence you'll have more to work with in photoshop) so don't go off wondering why your shots seem the teeniest bit out of focus at 100% zoom.

I recommed buying the battery pack. The D200, while awesome, can eat up batteries. As another add-on, check into the remote shutter release. There's ports for both a wired shutter release and a flash wire (not the good kind of remote shutter release though, it's digital and doesn't screw into the camera's shutter release button...bummer). Last thing is get a decent sized memory card. 2 gigs at a minimum, 4 is optimal.

Oh you bastard! I have a d70s and LOVE IT.

I can't imagine how that thing is!

It's surprisingly similar to the D70s.
