Hay /p/, I just got some free cameras: A 35mm Olympus Stylus point and shoot and a sony FD-Mavica. I'll probably play with the FD mavica because its digital but I don't think i'll waste a roll on the Olympus. The FD may be fun because it can shoot raw and save as BMP, filling an entire floppy with one .3MP image. The Olympus, on the other hand doesn't seem fun/interesting/useful at all. I've never used a point and shoot 35mm before. What does /p/ think?

mavica > generic 35mm P&S hands down

now go use all those forgotten floppies you have!

When shooting film, I've only ever used an SLR. Is it worth it to drop a roll in the Olympus. If /p/ doesn't think it is, i won't bother.

I was told just today that the Stylus Epic behaves much like a Lomo, so if that's your bag, give it a shot.

It comes full circle: working at .3MP is just like working with large format.

Uh, that Stylus will take much prettier pictures than the Mavica. It'll be just as sharp as many 35mm SLRs - that lens is pretty damn awesome. Can't say the same for the Mavica. Also the Stylus Epic should be splashproof and whatnot, IIRC.

Trash the Mavica once you get sick of playing with floppies.

DO NOT TRASH THE MAVICA! Floppy-disk cameras are already collector's items, imagine how much it'll be worth in a couple decades.

I bought a small Olympus clamshell 35mm in a rush to get ready for a trip. I like the results. My only complaint was no zoom. I still use it when I can get really cheap film developing; I feed the negatives into my scanner for prints. I consider it more disposable than my much more expensive digitals.

OP here, In order to satisfy my curiosity, and possibly yours, I'm going to get a new battery for the olympus (it takes those 3v lithium ones). I have a roll of black and white film laying around too. I'll charge up the mavica and go somewhere and shoot with the two of them at the same time. I'll post results within the week if /p/ likes.

Also, How does /p/ think i should go about posting shots form the olympus? My dad has a flatbed scanner i can borrow with a light in the lid for negatives. Should I scan prints or negatives?

Negs. It will give you a better result scanning negs in a dedicated negative holder than scanning a print.

Agreed. Outside of, maybe, hand-made prints, there aren't many situations where scanning the print is a great idea.

Unless it's a fancy-ish flatbed, prepare to be underwhelmed by its film scanning

Same could be said for the Oly P&S.

Negative scanners are okay, but they have spectacularly shit quality. Don't judge lens sharpness with the scans - squint at the negatives or use a loupe.

Whoops, I meant flatbed scanners. Real negative scanners are excellent.

OP here, I found some pictures I took with the Olympus that my grandfather let me take when I was a lot younger. It really can't be used as a judge of quality because I:

A) am using a sub $100 dollar flatbed
B) I must've been about 8 and knew nothing about photography; I probably didn't even let it focus.
