I'm buying a DSLR soon, my budget is $500 and the only experience I have with SLRs is a (film) Canon EOS Rebel K2.

This. Except don't get a D40.

/pho/, for people who can't handle the *breakneck pace* of /p/ discussions.

Mentioning the D40 avoids the trouble of real Nikonfags coming in and posting.

This also.

derogatry comment about /pho/ and its status as the worst board ever created ever.

Stop being fags. Buying an expensive camera won't make a good photographer out of you. I know people with a D40 that make better shots than people with an Alpha 700.

Also, Nikon.

ROFL

disgruntled d40 owner feeling the need to justify his camera

Nobody in this thread told him he had to get an expensive camera. The 350D recommended is $30 less than the D40. We're recommending against the D40 because it can't share lenses with his film camera.

The film camera only has the kit lens. It doesn't actually belong to me so I never bothered getting anything new for it.

Does this change the recommendation any?

not really

the canon will let you use a cheap 50mm lens with af

unless you want to go pentax or olympus

In that case, might as well consider the Nikon D50. I still wouldn't consider the D40, D40x, or D60, though. They'll be great in a few years when (if) Nikon has updated all of its fast primes with in-lens focus motors. Right now, they kinda suck.

But I personally would still say to go with the Rebel XT or XTi, because I'm a canonfag.

I'll probably go with the Rebel, then. There's still the fact that I can use any additional lenses I buy for it on the film version, and I do enjoy shooting film time to time.
