i was browsing through the ads for cameras and a couple read like "Nikon Digicam. Body only".

What does this mean? Does it mean the seller is only offering the shell of the camera? Seems like it since it's cheaper than usual prices, but also seems expensive just for a shell.

Simply put you get the camera without the lens. At some point it's better because you might not like the bundled one, though by spending (only) say $100 you got relatively good lens, flash, backpack and all the other shit retailer might include in the kit package which bought additionaly would coust a lot more. So it depends.

if you're just starting out go with the kit lens and a 70-200ish zoom. You'll know when its time to gear up. It sounds stupid but its true

Get the kit lens with it, it will help you figure out what new lenses you need, And its cheap as hell

Also don't buy a kit if it has a flash in it, unless its a really good one (sb-600 or sb-800)
