Hey /p/

Do you ever go urban exploring? Taken photos?

I havent yet, but im being cajoled into exploring old Mills and Bunkers soon.

(yes, will take cameras)

I used to sneak into a decommissioned army base near Monterey, CA a lot, but unfortunately my camera at the time was shit and i never got any good images.

I broke into the sewer system in San Francisco a few years ago but, again, I had a shit camera and no lighting setup, so I never managed to get any really good images, and the few I had were lost in a catastrophic hard drive failure.

Unfortunately the cops have really cracked down on urban explorers since 9-11. Most places that used to be accessible are now blocked off, and if you get caught now you get charged with trespassing immediately. No more light warnings.

Same rule applies over here really, although unless youve cut some locks to get in you can probably just shake your DSLR in the humble bobbies face and get away with it...

or Just run.

I LURV urban exploration. It's risky, dangerous but it's all worth it. I haven't done it in a while but, i'm trying to go into this Psychiatric Center about 45 minutes away from me. Thing is, no one wants to go with me; everyone chickenshits out.

I dunno supposively, I found one person who's up for it but I'm pretty sure they'll just be like everyone else and pussy out at the last minute.

"As an American, I'm entitled to photograph anything, anywhere, any time, so long as I'm not on someone else's property. Since I've learned how to move fast and how to work with law enforcement, not call them stupid for doing their jobs, I never have any problems.

Cops are there to be sure that everything is OK, which they can't tell until after they talk to you. Open up, be honest, and no problem. Be a pain and argue from the start and you may be the one creating your own trouble. When I'm talked to by the PD, we always have a good time and they tell me their favorite places to shoot, but only after they've run my ID through the system.

If you have an issue, open up, then move on to something else. Your best policy is not to be seen: shoot from the hip and keep moving. The D3 lets me shoot hand-held at night: I'm gone long before any guards even notice me on their security cameras."

i love it, but i'm a bit dried up concerning it at the moment. Going into abandoned places kinda loses its charm when you find a boarded up house on every street. The place i live is kind of a shithole, so every now and then you come across multiple blocks of houses and deserted streets. i never thought i'd get bored of it, but it loses its novelty really quickly, especially since theres not much variation in architecture etc round here. You rarely find anything worth shooting.

Pic not related, as it is an example of a far more fun place to wander round and photo :D

A week ago two friends and I explored an enormous old cotton factory (we think - I keep hearing conflicting info on what it used to be), that was pretty cool.

It was made up of around 10 massive buildings, so even though we were there for over 4 hours there was still a lot we didn't explore.

Tried to go back again yesterday but the route we had used (going through an empty house and out through the basement window into the factory car park) was locked.

i have done this many times since i got my DSLR :)
The feeling is awesome and the pictures look great too. Here in my town its easy , because there are many abandoned Places and the police isnt there where you are. :)

I've been thinking of calling up the current owners of abandoned property like this and actually asking permission to go in and take pictures.

(I'm a pussy when it comes to things like B&E, you see)

The whole point of Urban Exploration is that you're breaking into places that are off-limits to the general public.

Is that the one near San Francisco?
If so, I'll totally go with you. Maybe.

Lots of really good photos in this set.
I guess they were taken in 2004, and since 2006 (probably after the feds discovered photosets like this) the building has been under guard 24/7.

>The abandoned Public Health Service Hospital (PHSH) is located in the Presidio of San Francisco, at the north end of 15th av (see aerial photo, historical map, google-map, google earth Placemark, and bird's eye view). Built in 1931 on the site of the old U.S. Marine Hospital (1875), the 480-bed hospital, also known as building 1801, closed in 1981.

This never works.
Nobody wants to allow you permission to go onto their dilapidated property for liability reasons, ESPECIALLY if it's an old government site or factory.

I live in the Presidio just a few minutes walk from the PHSH. I went inside of it in 2005 when I first moved here but I sucked at photography back then and only took a few shots before accidentally setting off a motion detector and nearly being arrested.

Like 166430 said, it's under 24/7 guard now and has been for about a year and a half. I've tried getting access to it under my art student guise and all that but they just won't let anyone in there because of liability concerns.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Maybe if I were to offer to sign away any rights regarding my safety while on their property?

i think someone who was exploring it was seriously injured or died, so they ramped up security.

Legally this would work, and if you're talking about an individual or some sort of local government then you might stand a chance with something like this.

You'd need to make up the document and present it to someone along with examples of the kind of photography you'd like to do and some sort of spiel about how you wanted to record the structure and then post it on the internet or what have you.

But if it's a federal or state government building or owned by a large corporation nothing will change their minds.

Whatever you do, do it during daylight hours.
You run a greater risk of getting caught, but you're also significantly less likely to fall down an elevator shaft in the dark and kill yourself.

If you do go in, know that if you decide to stay in there when the police tell you to come out they will send the hounds on you. For serious.

Yeah, I'm thinking more of buildings that are trying desperately to be sold by local real estate firms than things like huge decrepit government installations.

Worth a shot, if nothing else.

All their friends use DA?

They make the sort of art that's more appropriate on DA?

They prefer the sort of mindless praise they get on DA to the sort of mindless praise they'd get on Flickr?

They hate Yahoo and all Yahoo-owned products?

They hate Microsoft and fear a Microsoft takeover of Yahoo would leave them using a Microsoft product?

They're in junior high school?
