Get a cardboard box, cut out three sides, and cover them with thick tissue paper. Anything translucnt will work; see what you have around. Then get a strong light shining on each side; I use a pair of 500 watt units from home depot.
Use the right amount of exposure and such settings and you should have a nice even background, like in the OP pic. Getting the light even from top and sides help if you want a very even background. Try setting your light sources farther away from the box rather than close up. Either way, though, a nice plain background (with or without shadows) will look very nice with even lighting on the figures.
