At least for me, though, it's really *less* spontaneous and free than putting it around the neck and holding it. Maybe because I'm always reminded of the strap. I do use it, though, when trying to get the camera to go unnoticed or when in a situation where it could be stolen. Much harder to steal a camera tightly wrapped around the wrist than dangling from the neck- and it's much easier to whack them upside the head with it and run. None of that from personal experience, though, thankfully.
