Hey /p/,

I am new to photography and I want to get a 35mm SLR. Should I get a Canon EOS Rebel K2 or a Nikon N80?

Pentax K1000.

Nikon F or F2, Olympus OM-1, Pentax MX or Leicaflex SL or SL2.

None of them need batteries. All are great.

First one has a full coverage viewfinder and is virtually indestructible, second one is the smallest and quietest and has a less-than-full-coverage viewfinder that supposedly feels like sex to shoot with, third one is small and just a great camera, none of the standout features of the others but still very solid, last one has the best and most expensive lenses, is also virtually indestructible (one fell from a jet fighter at high altitude and lived), and also has a less-than-full-coverage viewfinder that supposedly feels like sex to shoot with. I've looked through it, and it is really, really bright.

Overrated and overpriced.

I don't know a thing about the canon, but the n80 would be a perfectly good camera. It gets compared favorably to their professional level film bodies.

Although for not much more, you could go a step up to something like an f100. Price difference is surprisingly small.

Is this a good deal?

Could be an absolutely epic deal, or could be nothing. I've heard some people say that Zuiko 50/1.4 is one of the best lenses of all time.

"Due to its age, this camera is sold strictly as is" could mean "haha, it's fucked" or "I just don't want to risk some trouble if the camera busts."

Ask him if you can run a roll of film through it before you buy. Just some cheap drugstore film and development to make sure the camera works. Get it Cleaned-Lubed-Adjusted (CLA'd) afterwards; this costs a little bit but it's worth it, especially with a deal like that. Any camera repair place should do it.

It's probably still worth it just for the lenses, though, as long as they're in good condition. Assuming you buy another Olympus SLR, which shouldn't be too hard to find.

Correction: I was thinking of the 50/2 Zuiko Macro, not the 50/1.4. Still probably worth it for the lenses, as long as they're in good condition and as long as you get another Olympus SLR.
