yes, BUT it's always in the back of my mind that they may be trolling and catch me out if i agree with them. i tend to wait until everyone is finished talking about the photo and then offer my criticisms, but now that i'm getting some semi pro catalogue jobs, everyone is suddenly highly critical - particularly jearous friends IMO

I actually get clients to pay me decent money for the shit photos I take with a rebel and kit lens. They seem to think its so amazing and I just lol whatever keep paying.

i get digital prinmts at costco and bring them to class with me. anything b&w makes the bitches swoon. most of the color stuff too, surprisingly.

and i fucking suck at taking photographs but i own a 5d so it's all insta art mirite?

Personally I just like jacking off to my own photos.

I feel kinda guilty when I get praise for sunrise shots I took while wasted.

I don't.
I feel fucking terrible, because it means they can't differentiate between good and bad photos and my work is all for naught.

Same. I also rage a bit when people say things like "oh what a great photo; you must have a really expensive camera".
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
nah, i'm smart enough to know that they probably have hobbies and interests about which i know nothing.

so when i show them a flower macro or something boring and they get excited, i know how they feel when i get impressed by a knit scarf or some pointless sports accomplishment that true fans don't really care about. (OH WOW GUYS DID YOU SEE TIGER WOODS' SCORE IN THAT LAST GAME? THAT GUY IS OUT OF CONTROL!)

Post some other stuff on /p/, Serenar. The only thing we've seen from you is one sunrise shot taken while you were wasted, and I've got a feeling you're probably pretty good.

Why?
You do have a really expensive camera, compared to the <$200 P&S most people have

or, you take some good photo that only people who actually understand and know photography "get" and the normal people say it sucks.

Damn right.

My grandparents framed a couple of photos I took of some windmills and the open plains I took in Texas with a crappy P&S. They were really shitty, generic photos, but they are simple folk.
>> Anonymous
It always bothers me when people can't tell the difference between a good photo and a mediocre one.

What really pisses me off, though, is when I show somebody a picture and they say "dude, you've got an awesome camera!".

What also pisses me off, though, is seeing people go crazy over a shitty photo that's post-processed to hell.
>> Anonymous
Hey dipshits, you should embrace the "uneducated folk" for loving mediocre shots, that's how you make money. Fuck you guys are pretentious.

way to go champ - you just insulted 99 percent of possible customer for you stuff. The 1% who are "photographically educated" are too smug or uninterested in buying stuff from an unknown. "Why the fuck do I want a photo from some guy name Schmertz?'

I am pleased when anyone wants to buy my work.

lol I ripped apart this girls myspace pic once, saying how the highlights were blown, along with the lighting being at such a horrid angle - my penis had retracted into my body.
Yeah, I haven't spoke to her since :(:(

Ugh. A friend of mine sent me some pictures of her dog (pretty generic new-pet-owner shots. Front-on flash and whatnot). I told her that I didn't find them that interesting. I even held back and kept my *real* feelings to myself (i.e., my comment was along the lines of "Well, they're just pictures of a dog. I don't find pictures of other people's dogs that interesting" rather than "These are bad and you should feel bad.")

She didn't speak to me for a week.

Not sure that's a bad thing.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Also, just for the record: She asked me to tell her what I thought of the shot photographically. It wasn't just "Hey, look at my cute new puppy!".

I showed some of my stuff to my grandmother, and my great aunt from America just now, and they were telling me that they were good, and the whole time I was thinking - "shame you don't know why"

You really think that when your friends or family who aren't photographers ask you what you think that they want to hear you tear them apart? Unless they're honestly trying to learn how to shoot better, just fucking tell them it's nice or some bullshit. Would you want someone to tell you that what you though was pretty cool and wanted your approval was total shit and list the reasons why?

>>257937
Spoilers: she didn't. DO I LOOK FAT IN THIS DRESS?
>> Anonymous
>>257938
They don't have to know why, you cock. That's the beauty of images. Sure, you can have a deeper understanding of it, but in general it isn't required to enjoy a picture, be it man made, or photographed.

...

Why else would I post my pictures to /p/?

Anyway, I realize that she was just looking for me to say "As a skilled photographer, I can honestly say that these are the best pictures I've ever seen" but I'm just too honest (i.e., a really, really shitty liar) to do that.

On the plus side, this happened like last week, which means it's well after I stopped making any serious efforts to have sex with her.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
I always just figured it was peoples taste in pictures. Some of my mediocre stuff people will think are great (especially the HDR shots lol), Then my favorite work they will be just as impressed.
However I just try to use that info to figure out what kind of shots they are into. As I do sell my work, I like to know what will impress people the most.

However I won't sell out and start doing "OMG MY EYES" HDR's. Because unfortunately thats a common theme with people, everyone seems to think they are the greatest shit since sliced bread.
>> Anonymous
It makes me mad when other people are impressed by overdone HDR or other Deviant Art faggotry. For example, in one of my advanced photo classes at my university, some people had done that "selective desaturation" technique and everybody was like "WOAH HOW DO YOU DO THAT."

But when people who don't really know anything about photography like my work, I feel pretty happy about it, even if I don't feel accomplished with the piece myself.

Not this guy, but let me provide an illustration of what he said. I was at an art museum one time, and these two little redneck kids (somewhere like 5-7 or so) were absolutely rapt with a set of paintings by some Weimar modernists. *Weimar modernists.* Heartening sight; good art really is universal.

No, I mean outside of photography. You're not in school, you're not looking for serious critique. If you just dropped some dough on a pretty decent home theater setup and asked your a/v-phile friend what he though, would you be pissed if he told you it was bland and mediocre and that he's not interested in casual setups?

She wasn't looking for ZOMG AMAZING, she was just looking for you to say they were neat and be proud that her photographer friend even said they were decent. And you don't have to be a liar to tell someone that their work "isn't bad" or some shit like that. Would that have really been a lie? As a casual shooting goes I can't imagine that it'd be that bad. Just smile and talk about what they've done right.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

>And you don't have to be a liar to tell someone that their work "isn't bad"
It *was*, though. It was honest to god bad. There was honestly nothing complimentary I could think of to say. The exposure was poor, the flash was glaring, the composition was dull, and the dog was ugly. I was hoping when she said she was sending me pictures of it that I could at least get away with telling her that the dog was cute, but it just flat out wasn't.

Actually this is one of the many things most people don't even care about. Like the piece of paper on the street or the bird sitting in the tree. This kind of little shit is unimportant.

I'm not a pompous fag, so my knowledge above another's is not something I dwell on.
