You need a better camera, bigger CCD = less noise.
Here's my 20secs exposure.

I've been teaching myself this sort of thing and it turns out that the remote shooting software that comes with my camera doesn't work with mirror lock-up or bulb exposure on. The longest exposure I can get with it remotely (USB, not remote control) is 30". I don't know if this is a hard technical limitation that the software can't work around or the rudimentary software that came packaged is intentionally crippled. Need to get around to trying DSLR Remote Pro or getting a remote control.

I also need to look into dark frame subtraction to fix dead or hot pixels.

Forgot to mention that I do have a better camera, this is an older picture I took before I had it. Misleading, I know. My fault.

What camera do you use? If your EXIF is right, a Canon A80 is not dSLR grade and the CCD is TINY!

So, noise is very obvious. Information on noise cancellation: http://photo.net/learn/dark_noise/

Here's a 30 secs exposure on a D70.

I might try longer exposure once summer comes. With longer exposures, you need less light and further away from the city.

I just got an EOS 350D and now just need a good vantage point at night to get a shot of the sky/cityscape.
I'll find a roof somewhere or something.

Is the lens flare in that image you attached coming from a barely off-screen street light or the moon?

The EOS 350D has a long exposure noise reduction feature hidden in the custom functions menu. Has anyone investigated precisely how its noise reduction algorithms work? I want to know if I can do better noise reduction myself offline.

Lens flare is from the moon.

>>37807
You might want to use both the built-in NR and off camera NR to further remove noise.

Noise you say?
