Hasselblad digital cameras are good in low-light photography like this. You should really consider looking into buying one.

I'm afraid Hasselblads are a bit too pricey for me. Should I consider not doing low-light with a D40 or is there another DSLR that I could consider?

For low light situations, you have a number of options such as get a faster lens, increase exposure time, or add more light. Overall, too dark and since you have the luxury of a static subject, you should be able to add more than one light source and use bouncers/reflectors. Change around the positions of each until you find something you like.

OP here. I agree it is dark and I should add more light. Thank you for the pointers.

first, RESIZE YOUR PHOTOS ....

second, if you're shooting still life, exposure time does not matter ... if you need 10 seconds to see something, then set it to 10 seconds

ISO 200, f/11, aperture priority. use a whitecard/greycard maybe. The reflection of the lights appears blue to me. Nice to see someone shooting with a clean background. Bugs the crap outta me when the product is spotless but the background is covered in lint and smudges. Your camera's meter is smarted than you (most of the time.) I suspect aperture priority would yield longer exposure times.

Actually, they're not. Believe it or not, Hasselblads suck for high-ISO work. The problem is that it's not really what they're designed for--you rarely see people toting around a Hasselblad for things like shots in a club. They're for things like landscapes and staged portrait shots where the lighting is pretty well under the control of the photographer.

Don't believe me? The maximum ISO of an H3D is 800. I'm sure it's a beautiful 800, but my lowly Rebel XTi can do 1600 natively, and the (much cheaper than an H3D) D3 blows everything else on the market out of the water right now. Oh, and also, I don't think there are any Hasselblad lenses with particularly wide apertures. I've heard a Mamiya F/1.9 lens referred to as the "Noctilux of medium format" which suggests that you're not going to be able to get something like an f/1.4 or f/1.2 on a Hasselblad either.

And yes, I realize that "Get a Hasselblad" wasn't a serious suggestion.

I agree with the other comments. Moar light. I'm guessing you were going for a silhouette look here, but I don't think it's really working--at least make the backlighting brighter if you're going for silhouettes, and straighten out the backdrop so you don't have the huge dark shadow on the right side where the light isn't hitting.

Ooooh. Your mention of the D3 reminded me that we should be getting the first trickle of info from PMA tomorrow! The gear lust and excitement has me all a-quiver

Personally I am looking forward to the new cameras, lenses and other gear as much as the RAGE and HATE that will be all over the internet as people argue over it all. It will be glorious.
