40D Or D70s R|A
Canon 40D or a Nikon D70s.

Now I am more familiar with the D70s body and I spent the majority of my senior year in high school shooting one, and frankly I love the results i obtained out of it (pic is one of the 2800-3000 I took over the six months i used the camera), and a quick look over ebay prices them at the $250-500 range (with a 18-70 3.5-4.5 lens, same thing im used to shooting it with), which that price works for me, since I know how the camera will perform.

However, I spend 5/6 days a week selling, you guessed it, cameras at a major electronics store. The majority of the sales I make are of the Canon 40D, unless someone is dead set on a XT/XTi/d40/d40x/d80, I never even talk about those cameras. Which in the time I've had the 40D out showing it off, and sometimes just passing the time, I am by far more impressed with the speed and response of the 40D.

Thing is its a bit out of my price range, and with major hour cutbacks at work (35-40 hours a week down to maybe 12-20), Its hard to save up when most of my check now goes to bills, and gas.

So is it worth saving up and waiting till possibly next summer for a 40D or should I take chances and buy myself a D70s so I have something to do outside of sitting on my ass playing CS?

D70 is good if you like it.
I'd go with something other than a 18-70
Preferably with a minimum f/ 2.8

yeah I know, like I said im used to just shooting with that setup, i will definently get a faster lense for the camera (whichever one) down the road. I'm mainly right now looking into which (yeah the 40D is by far superior) which is the best for right now. waiting and saving or having a nice camera so i can get out of my house, since i have 2-3 days of work for at least the next 9 months, unless everyone quits at the same time again (went from 12 people in my D.I. to me, and it was like that for 4 months)

it's a great time to pick up a D70s since you've mentioned the prices are low.

The 18-70 is also a fantastic kit lens. The investment in the system means you haven't gotten to a point where you wouldn't be able to move to Canon if you so choose to.

The point is, you'd still be able to shoot with the D70s and use the spare change to get yourself in a better position.

Getting out of the house should be priority #1

photograph as great as it is, can wait a little.

If you really like the 40d and would get one in the future, grab a 20d or 30d now so the accessories and lenses you're buy now can be used on the 40d later.

I agree with the point.

Also OP, comparing the D70s and 40D is kinda pointless. The 40D is a step above D70s and it's also Two and a Half years newer than the D70s... essentially a lifetime in digital terms.

Eh, I originally was going to buy a refurbished 20d for around $750 off of adorama.com, but that was way before the 40D came out. Once the 40D, It was no question that was my camera.

Its just recently I was digging through my archives and I realized how much I loved the interface and feel of the D70s, And even at 6mp ive received many beautiful shots out of it.

You know that's not too bad of an idea, the eBay auction ive been eying is only at ~$290 (but it has a reserve :/ ) and that has 4 days or so left. I'll have to think about that a bit more, since either way I will eventually own a 40D.

Oh, I know its by far superior. Im looking at this from the point of:

A camera I know virtually everything about it and how it functions, and what to expect, and one off of ebay isnt a big chunk of change, and it would still beat the hell out of any point and shoot for the same price.

OR

A badass camera thats going to leave me eating ramen noodles for several months after i buy it.
(even though its only $1330 my price with the 28-135 IS 4.5-5.6 lens kit)

ahhh i see, well if you do eventually want to get a 40D, check out an old 20D 30D or a 300D or a 350D now. Their prices are too high and will save you the trouble of changing systems.

You might as well go Canon now since you want to do i eventually.

Cause i assure you, once you go Nikon, you prob won't want to leave :D

I know, and for the most part that's my whole problem.

well the funny thing is, if you know the D70s really well, you'll know the D200 etc quite well too. The Menu systems and metering/auto focus are all the same, infact better on most of the other models since the D70s is a grandpa for digital Nikon SLRs.

IT sounds like you're putting alot of thought into this and all we can offer is to clarify what you already know. But honestly, get your arse out of home first. Seriously. hehe

D70. If you know it and like it, what's the issue?

But Jeremo's right: get out of your house. Hell, getting out of your house, going to a drugstore, and buying a disposable camera will get you better photographs than sitting around your house with a full kit of a large format camera, a Hasselblad H3D, Nikon D3, and Leica M8.

Uh, unless you're getting it without tax, that's just the regular retail price.

>>110367grab a 20d or 30d now so the accessories and lenses you're buy now can be used on the 40d later.

The battery grip for 20/30D isn't compatible with the 40D. But the one for the 40D is backwards compatible.

Montana has no sales tax, and everywhere here sells it for $1499.99. (and I don't really want to buy it anywhere else other than from my work, only so I can get our store service plan on it)

>>110424

Mostly my issue is weather its a good investment to get a basic DLSR now, and still upgrade latter to a better system, or wait all together. The only reason I havent got a point and shoot, or disposable too, is I ONLY shoot in full manual, no dinky little point and shoot I sell has the response of even (ugh) a d40.

Actually the more i think about this, i really don't know why I'm asking anyways. :/. I think im going to try my luck on ebay, and after taxes just buy a 40D

Please be careful of shopping around and seeing any amazingly low prices. If it is too good to be true IT ISN'T TRUE! Most prices only vary a little.

My employee discount gets me that price. I sell this camera every day, what I have in stock is only brand new Canon USA 40D's.
