I wish I had known this when I first got into shopping for cameras, but here's the secret: your camera body means dick. Seriously. It might as well not matter. One body will take roughly the same quality picture as well as another body that costs thousands of dollars more. The difference is so minute that it should only matter to true professionals (read: none of us).
It's all about the lens. Get yourself a nice sharp wideangle prime and go to town. The Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 would be a good, affordable choice, and it's wide enough for indoor and documentary style shooting, too.
Also look into the super cheap 50mm f/1.8. You'll love it. Incredibly sharp, great in low light, and probably the cheapest lens you can buy new. It will literally open up new opportunities for you to shoot, like poorly lit concerts, street photography at night, and so on.
Have fun shooting!
