I need a flash Anonymous
I just recently bought a Nikon D40 to get into photography, and so far I've enjoyed it.

And now I've decided to buy myself a flash, nothing too fancy due to my limited student economy. Would a Nikon SB-25 for a hundred bucks be a good choise?

Any tips?

It will work, but he would need to set flash into manual mode and set all the values like iso and sync by himself

Well, learning by doing. And maby buy an expensiver one when time comes. That actualy sounds fun. The first months I'm I'll ruin some shots though.

I just want a good flash, that I can rotate and angle (forgot to mention in OP, sorry).

Or is it worth it to spend a hundred more and go for a SB-600?

an SB25 will work in A mode. TTL mode is more accurate, but with some adjusting, A mode should work fine too

pfff, not really hard. set sync to 1/250th or slower, and aperture to the setting of the flash. setting ISO isn't that hard either

Yes it will

No, he doesn't, it has a very usable thyristor mode

I would personally say, no. The SB-600 is a less powerful flash. However if you absolutely need TTL, you don't have much choice. The D40 is so small, I would probably choose something like the SB-15 or 27. It'd be better balanced since the flash folds close to the camera for most uses.
Don't buy an SB400, it's only a bit more powerful than the on-board flash.

Get a Vivitar.

don't bother with the Sb-400. it's almost as pointless as the on camera flash.

100 bucks for the SB-25 sounds a bit much, a mate picked up 3 for 35 bucks each on craigslist...he's making some crazy lighting rig with it.

Try and grab a second hand Sb-800 if you can.

But i must state that i have the 800 and 600 so i only have experience with them and not the earlier non CLS flashes.

I've used the SB-600 and SB-800 and I'd say that you'd get most value from the 600. Most people don't need the 800.
