What an outstanding Photokina it's been this year. Every company had an exceptionally strong showing (well, except for Nikon). What is /p/ planning to buy among the stuff introduced?

I'm planning to get a 5D mkII, and I'll use my current 5D as a backup.

I want a small camera with a nice sensor. That Panasonic G1 looks great, although that Sigma DP2 looks good too (hopefully it handles better than the DP1, which I was tempted to buy). Too bad that Leica M8.2 is out of my price range.

Oh yeah, Photoshop CS4. I might have to put together a new 64-bit OS PC just for that.

Good job on buying stuff you don't need. Canon marketing department is proud of you.

It depends for me.

I'm currently using a body with kit lens and a flash that I could dump any instant.

So, it's either a D700 or a 5D II. It will probably be the Canon.

The higher resolution and video mode are more useful to me than FIFTY ONE MOTHERFUCKING AF points and faster continuous mode.

Or I guess I could settle for a D300 and use the extra $1,500 for lenses. ^_____^

But I do want that sweet, sweet ISO 25,600.

Is there anything really new and exciting about CS4? Form what I saw (just glanced at it, nothing too serious) it didn't look that spectacular.

I have CS2 and skipped buying CS3. I like the fact that CS4 is compiled for 64-bit addressing.

5D Mark II assuming it doesn't hit the back of my lenses. Cmon Canon, I know you can do it! I play around with the 5D every time I can at the local camera store, and really it would be just fine for me if it didn't have the mirror banging issues.

If it does, then it looks like it's a used 1Ds MkII for me instead. The new micro-4/3 stuff is intriguing to me but ultimately the crop is too big. I'd need a whole new set of lenses. Nothing else they showed this week really interests me.

I came when I heard about the new features in PsCS4, now THOSE are real upgrades.

Hitting the back of your lenses? Do elaborate.

As God as my witness, I will own that 5DII one day. Or possibly a 5DIII. Depends on how long it takes me to save up.

Also, the wee tiny u4/3 that Olympus was teasing us with.

I can dream about owning an A900, even though I have no need for one and dont intend on getting one till its replaced.

That and sony didnt introduce any decent new lenses (for me) so i'm still pining over the old Minolta 70-200/2.8 HS G.

When using some lenses that are not designed for modern Canon DSRLs, the mirror can bang into the back of your lens if it's too long.

That micro 4/3 camera from Olympus looks promising. Good thing I didn't join the rush to get the LX3
>> Grev !!5D+HXONd/uX
I agree Canon owned Photokina, put on a good show. Nikon absolutely sucked (I'm a Nikon user but not loyal to any brand really).

Only other thing I'm really interested in is the R2 from Leica, sounds delicious.

I think the only reasonable cases for who "owned Photokina" can be made for Leica or Panasonic. I would list Olympus, but their u4/3 thing is just a prototype.

The 5D Mk. III is just a 5D with more megapixels, sensitivity, and video. Nothing earth-shattering about it. The S2 and G1, on the other hand, create entire new classes of camera: the field-capable medium format DSLR and the not-small-format EVF. Also a 21/1.4 is a big feather in Leica's cap, if it and the S2 were actually affordable, those plus their other minor new things (M8.2, 24/1.4, 50/.95, and the Pradovit projector) would mean Leica definitely owned Photokina.

Ah, fuck it, Leica curb-stomped Photokina and Panasonic got a few kicks in. Olympus watched from the side. Everyone else just scurried past along the same route they had been going before.

Although, we all should keep in mind Photokina isn't over until the 28th.

Typo fix'd.
>> Anonymous
>>261871
This is nothing Canon can fix. The mirror is a fixed size, so it's bound to hit the back if you use lenses with long back elements.

>>261918
Not ground breaking? Amusing troll is amusing. The 5D MkII beats even Canon's top video camera. They're digging their own grave, as they're starting to rival their own video camera line with still cameras..

I just thought Nikon's response is always late, as much as I love using Nikons, I just find that they miss out big opportunities at times. They are doing better though, ever since they fired their board of dinosaur directors a few years ago.

I really think they lack in good primes, I have a 40d as well and the f1.2 primes can be used wide open, where as using the AiS 50mm f1.2 on my D700 isn't as ideal, it's sharp but veiling makes it look unsharp...

>Leica curb-stomped Photokina and Panasonic got a few kicks in
I disagree. Leica's announcement is new and exciting and groundbreaking, but unless it has a four digit price attached to it, everyone's pretty much going to say "Wow, that's amazing" and then go out and buy the new 5DII.

I'm with Grev re: Canon pwning Photokina this year. When the D90 was announced so quickly after the EOS 50D, I was thinking to myself "Wow, Canon just got its ass handed to it." Then the 5DII was announced shortly after *that* and I can't help but wonder if Canon announced the 50D when they did specifically to lull Nikon into a false sense of security so they could well and truly own the buzz at Photokina.
>> Grev !!5D+HXONd/uX
I hope the 50d is as good as it saids to be. I looked at the high iso photos at dpreview, it's ok and i think would attract more people to their camp.

And yes as said, the 5d2 fucking owns, who would even buy the 1ds3 anymore... I'm guessing the 1d4 and 1ds4 would be out very soon.

>This is nothing Canon can fix. The mirror is a fixed size, so it's bound to hit the back if you use lenses with long back elements.

There is no mirror interference issue with said lenses on the 1Ds series. It's only the 5D. It's not an engineering issue, just a choice about where they put some parts inside the mirror box.
>> Anonymous
Anyone got a link about this apparent mirror issue?
>> Anonymous
never heard of this issue with my 5D, but then again i only use Canon and Sigma lenses

what lenses is the problem with? really old school ones or converted to EF ones?
>> Anonymous
>>262188
Old-school manual glass via adapters. Screwmount Takumar wides (e.g. 35/2) are particularly prone to this.

MKI or MKII?
>> Anonymous
>>262206
5D doesn't have a permanent mirror lock-up.
Plus, the reason people use this kind of glass is usually to get small DoF and lots of borkeh, which means focusing by scale isn't going to cut it.
>> Anonymous
>>small DOF and lots of borkeh

Thank you for proving you know absolutely nothing about why real photographers want fast lenses. Enjoy your DA faggotry.
>> Anonymous
>>262211

No one knows about the MkII yet because no one has gotten their hands on it. There are lists online of which lenses will work on the 5D MkI and which ones won't.

I'm hoping they've played with it enough that it won't happen on the MkII. It's a really miniscule interference -- less than a millimeter, and it only occurs on wide angle lenses, and then only when they're focused to infinity. Very simple to fix if they chose to.

>Thank you for proving you know absolutely nothing about why real photographers want fast lenses. Enjoy your DA faggotry.

LOL. Too bad that's why photographers want fast lenses.

Sure, low light too, but come on fag.
People like borkeh because all the "artists" use it.
>> Anonymous
>>262242
When I pull out my 105/2.8, 135/2.5 or 50/1.4, I'd say that 80% of the time it's so that I can shoot in low light. The only place I do that for a small depth of field is if I'm feeling arty or taking portraits out in the environment where I can't change the background.
>> Anonymous
>>262242
HAHAHAHA, I'm still laughing at you.

Fast lenses = wider apertures, wider apertures = better low light work. Lenses work best stopped down some, so a 1.2 stopped down to 2.8 can have godly performance where 2.8 is okay on, say, a 1.8

The only people who buy lenses for OMG BORKEH are hacks that can't cut it in photography.

Why would they make a new one? The current one isn't that old, it's selling well and and compares well with other brands.

>>262277
He knows what he's doing, though.

Say you told me someone used a full-frame 16-35 as close to their only lens, and shot really wide with it a lot. I'd say they're probably an uncreative douche who needs gimmicks to make their pictures worth looking at.

Now say you told me it was James Nachtwey you were talking about. See how that can flip?

Now, Heavyweather is no where near as good as James Nachtwey (no shit), but he's still good and he still uses it intelligently.

Oh, and could we please stop calling shallow depth of field "bokeh/borkeh/etc?" Bokeh is a term referring to how a lens renders the out of focus areas on an image.

actually I just bought the 50mm 1.4 to shoot at low light, and it worked very well so far, especially at museums with dark lighting or the like.

so it's not all about shallow DOF, I really wanted it for low light shooting.
