FLIR? Anonymous
Hello /p/. I know this might be a bit out of your range, but I'm looking for a solution to a problem. Pic somewhat related.

So I've been working on a personal project, experimenting with climate conditioning and solar energy without modulating the air directly. Efficient? Unlikely. Fun? Shit yeah. This project has a series of lines which contain fluid for heating and cooling. They run the length of the house.

ANYWAYS!

I'm looking for a method to effectively monitor the lines for leaks, and because of the amount of lines, incremental pressure gauges wouldn't be all that effective.

I was thinking, because of the pressure difference, for both speed and accuracy (not to mention coolness), I could use a FLIR imaging system. In fact, for various reasons, it seems to be the most effective.

So, I come to you. Any suggestions? What do you guys have? What works? What is reliable? What was the most cost effective? What models work, and what don't? I'd hate to drop a couple hundred on something with poor quality. I really can't say where this project is headed, so I'd like versatility, something that'll not only get this job done but leave options for future expansions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Couple of hundred? The ones I've seen used cost tens of thousands.

Yeah, I don't think /p/ would be the ones to ask. When we talk about "infrared" we're having a shitfest about the Leica M8.

I would think /k/ would know more about FLIR than any of the other boards, though your best bet might be trying that and if you don't find an expert there going to /r9k/ and hoping someone there stumbles on it and knows his stuff.

OP here. It was sort of a shot in the dark -- Thanks, I'll try /k/ next!

FLIR = forward looking infra red

You just need any IR cam, a FLIR system will be milspec and so even a gen1 will cost lol.

Buy some UV dye or powder to mix with the coolant, then use a blacklight after it's been running to look for leaks.
