Its probably the best pro-sumer camera around, but you can get a really decent consumer level HD camera with 24p/25p support these days for half the price.

A what?

If you also edit, what software do you use for editing? Do you color balance the computer screen itself when adjusting the video in post, or use an external television monitor?

I do editing at a small place, use a huge LCD screen to edit on, but the colors are crap and can't be trusted. I would trade the huge LCD screen for two smaller ones, as less looking up and straining the neck is a good thing. The only good television monitor died recently. At work, I used FCP with a small amount of Motion.

I don't know what this is, but it's probably the phase one back of the videography world.

Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro for average stuff, After Effects for complicated visuals.

I use an external calibrated monitor.

I've mostly learned editing by just learning the programs. I have a bit of editing knowledge outside from technical aspects, but not as much as I'd like. If you have had any training/courses for the creative aspects of it, do you suggest going for it?

It really depends on how you work. Personally I learn the creative aspects of editing just by trying, and doing a lot of stuff. Watching other people's work helps too. Getting DVDs from the Directors Label gave me a lot of inspiration. It's only music videos, but you can see a lot of tricks that might give you inspiration.
Keep a list of things that amazed you, stuff like that.
I'm doing audiovisual media on an artschool, and we do not have lessons for the creative aspects. It's assumed that you develop that yourself. We do have film-history and such, showing the major revolutions and likewise works.

Thank you for your advice, it is appreciated. It is not often I talk with other people who edit.

I need to watch more movies then. I should start working on side projects again, so I can try new things, rather than this bland simple cutting that's required for this current project.

No problem at all, I love to help out other editors. Do you only edit or direct / write as well?

I only edit, other than doing camerawork, right now. Other than my flexible job, I also do simple tapings of local theatre. The simplicity of the editing and the content in both cases is frustrating. The job has the advantage of dealing with large amounts of footage that needs to be kept track of though.

Haven't touched writing. The only times I worked with any kind of directing / live switching was some high school classes and video club four years ago and a week long documentary course. Used to do a lot of studio camerawork for the local station that was mostly made up of volunteers.

You can always try to be creative in the shooting and editing of the local theatre.. Make them less simple as they are right now.
Or try writing some stuff up? It's hard to be creative with shot footage for others. I'm sure you can use your connections with the local theatre to have some people act for you, if you want to get into fiction.

Once again, some good ideas, thanks. I'm off for now, need sleep is necessary before coding in the morning.

as an "industry professional" I would say if you can't take the lens off its not a real camera. That and HDV is not HD, its just 480i. The only compromise is the HVX although I must say I'm very sick of it.
