/p/, given the choice to pick between 7 and 8 blades in your fast lens' aperture, what would you pick?

Quick pointer for those that dont know how this is important:
With 7 blades you get out of focus blur that isnt as round as you'd get with a higher number like 8. By being an odd number of blades, however, when stopping down, lights in long exposures bloom and form stars with a number of spikes equivalent to twice the number of blades.

In short:
[7 Blades] Spikier (14 spikes) stars in long exposures, blockier blur except wide open.

[8 Blades] Stars with 8 spikes, but overall smoother bokeh/background blur

What do you pick?.

I love my bokeh. So I'd go with the 8-bladed one in this case. Also, stars with 8 spikes is good enough for me as I don't do that sort of photography too much. If you're into the low-light long exposure shots, you might want to go with the 7-bladed one though.

Yeah, was thinking about that. Since it is a fast lens after all and I plan to use it at such speeds, at least more than slow exposures, then I probably want the 8 instead.

Want to know what other people think though. Did you know that Zeiss lenses for Hasselblads only have 5 aperture blades? At least many of them do.

My Canon 50/1.8 has so many I can't count them. 12 I think.

Are you sure? Cause the 'nifty fifty' 50mm F1.8 II has only 5. I assume you mean the old version?

Pretty lens.

Well, 12 blades is definitely out of the question considering the situation hehe

Shape of the spikes and the roundness of the bokeh depends not only on the number of blades, but on their shape too. Pic related.

I'd post the diaphragm of my grandfather's pre-war Tele-Xenar, which is even more awesome, but he broke it recently ;_;
