Too common. There's almost as many high-contrast-shot-of-a-light-in-a-dark-and-dingy-room shots as flower macros.

Nice work. The only thing I would change is maybe having just a tiny bit less contrast.

I have a feeling this one will work well in color. Could we see the original?

Very good. Great color, interesting subject. One thing I would have liked to see is more of the scene in the frame, but oh well.

May I ask where these shots were taken?

That was taken in West Sacramento. Trying to find something interesting there is like finding water in a desert unfortunantly.

Thanks for the comments.

Pro tip: Look for cacti and small animals.

By which I mean, there are good shots pretty much everywhere. You just have to become adept at finding them.

Which is really a much more important and fundamental skill to develop with regards to photography than the mechanical things like focus, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc. The most technically adept photograph done with the best possible equipment of a really boring subject is still pretty boring. Unless you artfag it up with some big explanation about how you're taking pictures of the mundane specifically to throw them into contrast with blah blah blah.
