pics for the paper. these get published in color or BnW totally at the whim of whoever does page layouts over there. event was a motorcycle run for a scholarship fundraiser.

as far as pictures for photojournalism... obviously i'm not looking for anything too abstract and the goal is to be very straightforward, but someone here has got to have tips on how to take pictures to show people what happened be eye catching and get noticed in papers and not just aesthetics advice. not every picture i take has to be a frameable piece of art, right? it just needs to say very clearly, like, for instance "lots of bikers were all over the road today and here they are"?

anyone willing to help, as always, is welcomed to comment.

an alternative to #1. i REALLY wish there were nothing in the lower left corner, and ideally another biker in front of the one mid-height in the photo on the left.

everything else i got was junky filler. just pictures of people eating and waiting to eat and obviously more motorcycles. not a lot i could do at an event like this. you can't have a story about a motorcycle charity drive and after party and sumbit photos of people not near motorcycles.

almost never more than 4 by 6 and often as small as 2 by 3. for something like this they would do like a half-page or 3/4 page spread with 4-6 shots on 11x17 tabloid size paper. i showed /p/ some memorial day parade photos last week and one made the front page, which is closer to 6 by 8 but i'm not sure.

Best for the paper.

Legitmately great photograph. Nice work.

A suggestion- try going out and taking general people shots in your spare time, and less macros. All the classic newspaper photographers were also talented street/people photographers and vice versa, up until a certain point in history.

what's so great about>>52879?
it's my favorite too which is why i posted it first, but as far as its non-paper related qualities, i feel like it's got too much JUNK to be great. street signs, mailboxes, lightpoles...

i'm VERY happy with the bikers and the road. the part of the photo from the base upward and inward following the road is satisfying but the surroundings seem a little cluttery. amirong?

i suspose its hard to keep the detail on newspaper. im assuming its normal newspaper quality paper.

yeah i really do hate that i'm getting published in a way that totally mutes any quality i may stumble upon in my work.

There is a little bit of distraction, but the situation would improve much if you would put it into black and white.

ask them what size they want before you send too so that you resize it properly, i had a picture published of an accident recently and they just totaly ruined the colours and resized it in pain from the looks of it.

after working for two different papers in the production room i have to say this has the best qualities for the paper.

the key is to give a clear concise image of whatever it is you are covering. metaphors dont word, abstract angles dont work.

usually they want a the concise shot to be run large. thats the attention grabber. usually they run a smaller shot bside/under/above it, and thats where the artisitc shots have a shot at being run.

i would say shoot to communicate first. what you have to understand that as a photojournalist the art is in capturing the moment perfectly and completely in one shot. if that means using some sort of odd angle or special effect, so be it.

but just concentrate on shooting for communication. your core audience of newspaper readers just want a well shot photo to accompany their story.
