What kind of settings shold I be using to scan negatives? I can't seem to find a balance between working file size + time scanning and quality.

This pic looked much better in the viewfinder...

well, what scanner are you using?
if its a Nikon scanner, i could help you.

Epson V200 photo. I looked all over town for a scanner last week, no one sells just scanners anymore, they're all multifunction. Finally found this at worstbuy.

i dunno anything about that scanner sorry.
but these are basiclly the settings i use.
ICE removes the dust and scratches from the film, works wonders.
ROC and GEM are mainly for faded and damaged films, and DEE sometimes is tricky to work with, so i just ignore it.
Scan Image Enhancer just makes the scan a bit better, but sometimes doesn't do a thing.
Speed is very much depended on the scanner itself, the Nikon 5000ED is a fast scanner, taking about 20seconds without needing auto focus or auto exposure.
Image size it normally around 30MB at 8bit, and double that at 16bit (i cant notice a thing so i leave it at 8bit)
and i leave multisampling at 1x as i also cant notice any difference.

there is no fixing if you don't know how to use the camera.

and don't know how film captures reality.

and use a sucky developing shop.

Also what are those green blotches? Surely don't look like leaves :P

if this is anything like the similar-looking-but-multifunction version, I can say just bring it back. I wrestled with one a friend had for hours (my minolta pits-scan is dead) and I just couldn't get usable stuff out of it. Slides or colour negs.

Protip: scan every automagic setting OFF (except the one which inverts colors & removes orange veil) and adjust in PS. Clean the scanner before scanning to avoid dust.

Protip: thats not always true. Leave ICE on, no matter how clean you think your negs are, they aren't clean enough.

...unless you're scanning traditional (not C41) B&W or Kodachrome.

indeed, but always with C41 and E6.
(no one seems to develop kodachrome anymore in nz, thats one film i really want to try)

This isn't a pro tip. If you care for your photos don't rely on the scanner software to invert the colours and remove the orange mask. Its much better to do this yourself.

Yeah, I think the only remaining place is in the US.

Asked my parents to get me some Kodachrome from there for my birthday. I want to shoot a roll while it's still an option.

(I've got a Nikon camera, I love to take a photograph, but Kodak already take'd my Kodachrome away)

Real pros look at the negative with a loupe and enter in the pixels manually.

It's the only way to really have control over your scan.

i rely on my scanner a bajillion times more than i would reply on myself to do what the scanner is designed for. I would rather use software thats specifically designed for it (ie, Nikon Scan 4). I didn't pay nearly a grand for a scanner to suck shit.
