24mm is
Bigger (much), Slower AF, Flares more

HOWEVER, the 24mm is sharper in the center than the 30mm is wide open. The 24mm is great for interior table shots and focuses incredibly close (1:2.9)
By f2.2 The 24mm is sharp even in the corners, and IMO outperforms the 30mm for sharpness.

Bokeh (Borkeh) Is superior on the 30mm at all apertures (Smoother), HOWEVER its easier to create short DOF on the 24mm because of the close focus distance.

30mm = DX only, 24mm = very fun on FX aswell

So I keep both, I think they both have their uses. The 30mm is best used for low light portraits and IR (focus is acurate. no hotspots). 24mm is more of a semi wide with low light capabilities.

hahaha, no. I'm not looking to be an OMG PHOTOGRAPHER or any of that shit, so what you people have to say means absolutely nothing. I just take pictures to record things like birthdays etc. why the fuck do i need to know 'TECHNIQUE' and bullshit like rule of thirds for that?

tldr: LOL NO.

I can certainly understand that. We are kinda jerks sometimes. But I still think the world would be a better place if you'd post some pictures.

Because if you learn technique, your snapshots will be better. Compare the stuff Heavyweather takes when he goes to a party to the stuff your average MySpace girl takes when she goes to a party.

This varies by personal preference, heavily:

55-250IS: Good enough for my telephoto stuff. Cheap. I don't do telephoto stuff, but I had to have *something* with IS. Eventually I'll probably pick up a 70-200 2.8 IS for the upgrade.

50 1.8: Again, cheap. Cheap as all hell, really. For the price? If you don't have something better, you should have this. I'll probably end up buying the Sigma 50mm 1.4. Actually, for most of my use, the Sigma 30mm 1.4 would be more useful, but I'm too critical of the edge softness. I'll actually probably end up going FF eventually just so I can get a reasonably sharp, fast 50mm equiv.

Sigma 10-20: Again, good enough. The Canon 10-22 is better though. It has less complex (read: correctable) distortion, and if you shoot RAW you can have DPP correct the distortion for you. Actually, on the wide end of the 18-55IS, the distortion is brutal. It corrects very nicely in DPP though. With the Sigma, the distortion is acceptable to me, since I don't shoot any distortion-sensitive subjects really. Paying only a couple hundred to pick it up used also influenced my decision - I would've gladly paid $200 more to get the Canon.

Since there isn't a sharp edge-to-edge 50mm equiv on a 1.6-crop fast prime, I've moved to just shooting my indoor shots with multiple flashes and the 18-55IS.

So yeah this is /p/ and everyone says buy a entry level dslr and 50mm prime. Why? Because its good glass for cheap? Sounds fair enough.

The problem is its pretty much a useless lens. Ok its reasonable for portraits.. but still not as great as something longer like 80mm or 100mm. Its pretty good for live music i suppose.

Otherwise its pretty dumb. Its an akward focal length to walk around with. On street you are limited to having a single subject or moving so far away the subject moves into the background.

I think the only reason why people recommend a cheap 50mm as a first lens is so that kids with their new dslr want some noticeable bokeh to show how proffessional they are. Well fuck that.

Luckily i got out of this cheaply by purchasing an old ricoh 50mm for 20 bucks. Now i'd like to pass this on to everyone in buying first lens town, save your money for a lens with a normal to wide field of view if you want a walk around lens or a longer lens for portraits. Leave the 50mm for people who want minimum depth of field per dollar for wank factors. Crop sensors have killed the nifty fifty lets move on.

50's still not a bad lens to have, though. 75mm equiv. isn't a horrible focal length. I have mine because I bought it for film before I ever had a DSLR, though.
