These are good; the dock one is the best.

>>37164
>>37165
Uninteresting composition.

>>37169
This one just rankles me for some reason, but I'm not sure of why.

i like the dock one quite a bit too.
do you mind terribly expounding a little bit? i'm new enough to photography to not really even know what composition means.
these were taken in september '06 -- i didn't start wanting to learn to take photos till january this year. looking back through my old shots, i saw a few i liked so i tossed 'em up here.

Sure. Composition is everything in the photo, and where everything is in it. It's the subject, everything around the subject, and where those things are in the frame. Basically, anything one doesn't press a button on the camera to control.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composition_%28visual_arts%29

The helpfulness of the Rule of Thirds it mention can't be stressed enough: taken as a rough guideline, it will reduce the number of uninteresting photographs you take. You (or at least, I think it was you) mentioned you'll be getting an S3 IS in another thread. When you do, pull up the menu, go down to the "Custom Display" bit, and turn on the grid, which will place a small grid right over the display that lets one see where things will fall on it.

On>>37163, the thing that makes it work at all, really, is the tree and the shoreline, but especially the tree. The house off in the distance is a weak point... it does give the photograph a central point, but it is too bright, I think, to not be disruptive.

>>37164is just too empty of a frame, or perhaps unbalanced would be a better word: all the "stuff," with the exception of a wisp of land, is at the bottom and the rest is just water and sky. Stepping back maybe a meter or something to put in frame more of the shore would have helped it, I think.

>>37165is the lighting, mostly. The composition is technically good, but the photo still seems uninteresting. The light just happened to be wrong.

On>>37166, the foreground is well-filled and the background is interesting. Also, the Rule of Thirds applies to this photograph: the horizontal middle of the dock lines up perfectly with the lower-right intersection, and the right-hand trees are reasonably close to the top-right.

>>37168is really the contrast between the color and light on each side of the picture. Plus, once more, the foreground and background are well-filled.

And again,>>37169bothers me, and I'm not sure why. If I had to guess, I'd say that it may be the excess of green in the picture, but I'm honestly not sure.

Oh, and you can't tell well from the thumbnail, but attached to that is your dock photograph with the rule-of-thirds grid layed over it.

i see. so the science of aesthetics actually has some solid rules that can be displayed in grid format. i like it.

you know what i think it is about 37169? the top right corner disobeys the consistency the rest of the shot has. everything else looks organic and protrudes towards the middle clearing of sky, but then theres that one chunky angular piece of extra sky that makes it seem off balance.
