Nikon F5 NikoMan
I was wondering what /p/ thought about the Nikon F5. I've found what looks to be one in fairly good condition for sale on the local Craigslist for 300$. If it is in as good of condition as I've been told, should I purchase this? Anything I should know about the camera? I've read a few reviews, and most people have nothing bad to say, other than the size and weight. Thanks

Some guy here has one and loves it.

Good stuff, it doesn't seem like there are many people who don't enjoy it. It's kind of gigantic, and weighs a bit, but that isn't so much of a concern.

$300 is a great price for that camera.
I've got one of these and its totally bulletproof. The only down side is obviously the weight, but its the same as a D2hs/xs.
Mechanically they should be very sound no matter how scuffed the outer maybe.

Hey, thanks. Apparently they really are tanks. What lenses are you using with it?

i use my Tokina 17mm f/3.5 Ai-s or my Nikkor 20-35mm f/2.8 with it normally. Others like my 50mm f/1.4 or 85mm f/1.8 are great too, as well as my 8 other lenses lol.
Basically, the AF motor is this baby is the fastest you will EVER encounter.

It's useless unless you're doing something like sports.

so how does that make it useless? does it cease to function when it encounters a non-sporting environment?

F5 is build like a tank. You can beat the crap out of it and its going to keep working.

Get one if you feel the need for camera that can withstand nuclear strike.

I wonder if you read Ken Rockwell's review, as that's exactly what he said. If you're regurgitating old statements, I'm pretty sure he said this in regard to the cost of the camera at the time.

>>152150
Thanks..Exactly.

>>152157
Awesome. That's what I need. I'll make the plunge into this camera once the guy emails me back. God I hope it's not sold. eBay seems to have good deals on them. I occasionally spot unopened demo cameras for 400$. Thanks /p/

No, I've not read his review. But you could get a cheaper body for that amount with better lenses, since most of this you do not need if you're just going to do average things.

>>152150
It does. You have to use the external thumbcable and tell the camera what you are going to do. If it feels unappreciated with the task or notices you are lying through the cable, it will automatically shut off for at least five minutes. It's annoying as hell, these cameras with an ego.

I've taken my F5 to 9 countries with me without any major problems of weight.
Most F5's sell for $400++

Its funny how Nikon killed this camera with the D1

I wouldn't say Nikon "killed" the F5 with the D1 - that Nikon released the F6 is proof that the D1 didn't really directly kill anything.

WHY CAN'T I GET AN F5 FOR THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS I HATE YOU PEOPLE.

Oh, sorry. I forgot to tell you that I already have 3 lenses for the Nikon. I inherited an N8008 with a 21-35, 35-70, and a 75-300. The N8008 took a crap on me. The wide angle, and the 75-300 are Sigma lenses, which sort of concerns me, as the Autofocus speed on the F5 is said to tear up some cheap lenses....

An acquaintance of mine just got an F5 and 80-200 f/2.8D for $400CAD. Bastard...

yeah, they did release the F6, but you see all the press photographers and sports ones ditching their F5's for the D1 at that time (hence why there are so many F5's for sale for good prices)

It's only natural that news and sports photographers would switch to digital as soon as possible. Their the industries that stood the most to gain and least to lose since they needed huge numbers of photos as fast as possible and ultimately in digital format for prepress, and they aren't likely to do any big enlargements so quality isn't really an issue.

The D1 was the beginning of the end for film photojournalism.
