The s5 is great. It's being replaced within the month though. The new one is said to go for $450.

i have a s5 and lumix fz18 (given the s5..)

s5 has a very nice manuel macro thats easy as fuck to use but can be fidgetty.. all around though the fz18 is superior im my mind

if youre wanting big zoom, the lumix goes to 18x, although there is visible softness and occasional focus issues at the higher zooms, also a bunch of other little things the canon doesnt have like the ability to shoot raw. also uses li-ion cells compared to aa batteries.
the lumixs macro focus is pretty fucken good, just the canon can do it manually.

heres a comparison of a bunch of cameras in your range (the newer lumix, olympus and sony may be out of price range, dunno)

I have the perfect camera for you. Meet the Olympus SP-570UZ. Awesome camera, and it takes awesome macros. I've had it for a little over a month now, and its super easy to use. Using auto focus and super macro mode, you can take professional quality macros with no experience. Retail price is 450, but you can pick it up for like 375. Be carefull though of super low prices like $235, because those are knock offs with a plastic lens.

Yeah, I don't work at best buy... But reading what I wrote, I can see that lol. It's a good camera, and has an awesome zoom. It fits his criteria exactly. Trying to tell me its not a good camera? I love mine, and I'd even suggest my olympus sp-350, but they don't make it anymore. I'm not real serious about photography, I just like taking snapshots everyonce in awhile and this camera makes some of them look great.

Get a eos 300d or 350d body and add some decent glass, the EF-S 60mm prime comes to mind, and it has great magnification for macros.

Saw a few 300d bodies on ebay for 170 quid and less, add the 60mm prime and you're in the 500$ range.
