Today, I bought a Canon EOS 50E with a 28-105mm zoom lens and a 70-300mm Sigma telephoto (with hoods for both).

That, new batteries and and the case cost me £200 ($400). Bought because I previously owned only a digital SLR and fancied having a film one as well.

Bargain? Pic 100% related.

well yea thats trew.
but what about DOF its a lot harder to get it/nice OOF with a consumer/slow lens.

not to mention the higher versatility with a fast lens; wide open at night and stopped down at day if needed

Perhaps. However:
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM: $900
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS: $170
Delta-$: $730

Now, with that extra $730 I can fly, along with my lights and my slow f/3.5-max lens, out to the apartment of a hot redhead who'll let me take nude pictures of her. So yeah, the f/2.8 might give me a bit more versatility, but I'm gonna get better pictures if I spend my money on travel rather than glass.

I can spend the extra, get a better/more useful lens and fuck my girlfriend all night afterwards.

Go figure.
