I need some assistance so I do not make the same mistake in the future. I took this shot which as you can see is crap. The effect I wanted was actually to have a nice shot of the subject in focus and everything else blurred or otherwise not as important in the frame. I was knealing down into the grass. What's annoying is that the girl asked me if I could email her the photo. I said I would but told her I was not very experienced and the image on the camera LCD is deceptive and it could be like it actually turned out to be. Shit. I was zooming int the shot too which probably did not help as the light becomes closed off. What settings/things should I have been doing to get this shot to come out right?

And yes I would hit that (But I am too old) :(

Actually looking at the settings I needed to open the aperture right up. This is probably why the shutter speed was so slow. Dammit!

yeah, most horseback riders are jailbait or younger... there are some great DSLRs out there with good autofocus and fast continuous shooting, so you'd probably get at least one good shot in the time it takes to take even one on most P&Ss.
