So /p/
I need some lens recommendations for a super tight budget. They will be for my new Nikon D300, so have to be good enough to feed a fairly greedy sensor. It will not be used for work (The office insists on everybody using the company's Canon 20D's for uniformity).
I like shooting everything, but realize that I will have to wait with buying a good macro/wide angle/tele. So I need some general purpose stuff. I looked at the 18-55mm 100$ lens recommended by Rockwell, and maybe a 50mm/1.4 which sell used for about 230$. I can't be bothered with kit-type zoom lenses, I have one in storage somewhere which I never touch because it looses too much detail when zoomed.
recommend me something!
Pic not related, but I am looking for a good title:
"go get him girl!"/"Out here nobody will hear you scream"/"you can run but you can not hide"/"who's dog is it?"
a (possibly) happy-ending picture promised as reward for a good informative reply.

Invest your money in glass and not cameras you idiot... the d300 costs like $2000? get a d80 and the 17-50 f/2.8. Thank me later!
>> Anonymous
Or, well, at least get a nice 3rd party... Tamron 17-50 comes to my head (d300 is crop sensor, right?). It's very good, puts quite a show against the 17-50 from canon and nikon, granted you get a good copy, and it's ~ $400. Don't go lower than that though.
>> Anonymous
>>74897
D300 is supposed to be full frame with a crop mode.

but agreed, use the money on lenses instead of the camera. seriously. just do it.
>> Anonymous
>>74900
D3 is full-frame with crop mode. D300 is crop only.
>> Anonymous
>>74900
Full frame with crop mode? Huh? Nikon site says it's a DX sensor, so it's definitely 1.5x crop... as for OP, why don't you just get the 40D? It's out there, it's cheaper, you can get a very nice lens with the money you'll save (24-70L comes to mind), and you'll have work compatibility.
>> Anonymous
>>74902
oh whoops i was thinking of the D3. either way, OP should spend more money on lenses and less on the body.

If hes shooting sports or low light (or sports in low light) he will not thank you later.

actually if you don't care about the higher ISO's i would pick up a used D200 in a month or two, They are saturating the used camera market now, so prices will be quite low. Difference will be minimal between the D200 and D300 otherwise (a few FPS and the improved AF are the major ones, but if you don't shoot sports...)

/p/ you are failing me.
I am getting the D300 so please no talking of any other model or camera. It is pre-ordered for 1800USD from Adorama and I was put infront on the waiting list.
I wanted my own DSLR for a long time, then the D300 came out. I came and then I ordered one.
At this point an angry woman entered the story, and luckily didn't realize that you can cancel preorders at no costs. I kind of agread not to spend any more money on it, but well I need some lens obviously.
So that is the challange - the best cheapest lens for a 12MP Nikon (yes DX crop factor of 1.5).
The Tamron is interesting, but I think that a combo of 18-55 + 50/1.8 is superior - and for half the money. those two lenses cost 100$ each new.
For the ones of you who were worried about the kid all day- relax. He is best friends with the dog.

It's somewhat superior at 50mm, not really at the rest.

Cancel your pre-order. Spend more money on glass or apologizing to the angry woman.
>> Anonymous
Need to keep it really cheap? 105mm f/2.5 AI or AIs, 50mm f/1.8 AF, 35mm f/2 AI or AIs.

But, really, cancel that preorder. A D300 with an 18-55 will take pretty much identical pictures to a D40 with an 18-55. Glass, for the most part, makes the image.

haha. only pre-ordered and already getting angry-jelous looks from people that only have shitty cameras. I drive a used Toyota if it makes you feel any better. But my dick IS bigger than yours, so I win.
Someone posted a link here to someone describing "the box effect". there is something special about buying a new camera and you all know it. NONE of you would say 'no' to the new top model of whatever brand you are using. Besides, in my opinion the price difference from the D200 is not that important and I hope this body will stay with me for at least 5 years (it is rugged, has weather seals and all so no reason why not if I take care of it)
Besides, these are not the last lenses I ever buy. it is just something to get me started. in half a year or so the subject of buying lens can come up around the dinner table again.
I hear some almost-normal primes are also pretty decent for macro-shots. any ideas? I love macro so getting it as an extra would be nice. how is this 35mm f/2 AI? checking prices now.

Under specific conditions and for certain purposes, the D40 and D300 will take more or less similar quality pictures when using the same lens, true. For some purposes my coolpix5700 is superior to those two. But still, the D300 can't be compared to the D40, its two very different cameras. Its also not ONLY about picture quality.
>>75018
>>75022
I am very pleased to see that even in pre-order status, "my" D300 already has such a nice mouth watering effect on people with inferior cameras that dream about upgrading their own antique and rationalize instead that they are happy and I am an idiot. the D300 is not THAT expancive, and the price difference from the Canon 40D or Nikon D200 is worth it, for me.
I will also get other lenses at some point. In half a year I will probalby master the courage to take the issue up again around the dinner table. ("I really need a better zoom lens to take pics of the kid playing soccer" + "If your mom wants me to take good pictures in her 60th birthday, I really need a better wide-angle lens". I got it all planned, sort of. Angry woman's mom is 61 though, and it will take some years before the kid starts playing ball damn it.
Ok, I need more lens advice, and good excuses for buying expancive lenses!

I see that "my" new camera, even in pre-order status, already has a mouth-watering effect on poor people that wish they could also upgrade their junk to some top model. Please give me the satisfaction of replying with a rationalizition like "I am so perfectly happy with my *old piece of junk* that I would REJECT a free offer to upgrade". There is something very special in getting a new camera, and today (November maybe) it is my turn. I drive an old Toyota if that makes you feel any better. If you don't own a car then you might get some comfort from the knowledge that my dick is fairly average.

given the choice between a free D3 or a free lens, i would take the lens. why? because my body is enough. theres no reason to spend an assload more on your body just to have no good glass.
>>75073
its no reason to sacrifice glass to get the newest body that this guy probably wouldnt use close to the fullest looking at the pictures he's uploaded.

Or, you could stop being a dick, stop trying to manipulate your lover, stop masturbating over spec sheets, cancel your pre-order and get a D80 or older D200 or D100 if you need the waterproofing, and get better glass.

sorry for the multiple posting, either my internet or 4chan were playing tricks on me, and it seemed as if my posts keep getting deleted.
I don't know if you guys ever tried the cheap Nikon 18-55. It's a great lens. I only tried it on a D40 but it seems super sharp and distortion free (I didnt study the results closely blown up to 100% though). So I don't think that the glass will hold the camera's potential back. I will have the 50mm prime for those times I want the extra sharpness anyway.
>>75130
oooh your artistic critique left me hurting. Actually your logic is faulty. judging by the bad pictures I uploaded, I would say that I don't need an expansive pro lens. On the other hand, any kid can read a manual and use all the features of a camera. Actually, using the D300 is not much more complicated than using the D200 or D100. It is probably EASIER. in conclusion you suck.
>> Anonymous
>>75135
did i say pro glass? no. you can either get better or more lenses. you say you want a macro, wide, and tele. well guess what, save money by buying a less expensive body that will do just as good and get those lenses you want.

Dear Annoying D300 Buyer,

Do not think you are cool for having pre-ordered a D300 and think that we only tell you to cancel and buy something less expensive because we all want one. We often tell people to buy a camera more suited for them/less excessive and spend the rest of their money on lenses. We've told people to not buy a D80 and buy a D40 instead because of what they asked in their post, be it budget or level of photography. We've told people to not buy D200 and buy a D80 instead. So now, please take your gear whoring ass and leave.

Sincerely,
/p/

You completely missunderstood me. I don't think that I am "cool" because I pre-ordered a camera. That's just you projecting your feelings and thoughts on me. I think that the D300 is a cool camera though. And you are not /p/. You are just another invinsible and insignificant anon, a tiny part of a mostly dumb entity that is so preoccupied and full of itself that it can't even answer my simple question. Nobody asked you what camera to buy, and to think that I would trust a 2000$ dicision on you, a little sad and lonely boy that is too scared to even identify himself on an annonymus forum with a fake name.. keep dreaming faggot. Go find a girlfriend, it would do your self esteem much better than posting your "witty" remarks on /p/. It will also give you a nice sense of belonging, far superior to what you felt when you read the other post signing yours.
If you don't like the camera I am going to buy, then put your mobile phone on vibrate, shove it up your ass and call yourself from a landline until you do.
hmm I had too much coffee today, I hate working Sundays.

and yet you let us help decide what lenses to buy on a super tight budget? when a budget is super tight that means that you dont have the money to allocate it towards something, right? meaning you dont have that much free money, right? letting us decide what lens to buy with the last of your free money isnt so bright either, i would think. also, no matter what name i use you still won't know who i am. how does that make me scared that i didnt put something in the name field? obviously you sir are the one thats full of themselves and you are just trying to justify buying the most expensive camera because its shiny and new.

I'm not jealous, I'm just angry that you have more money than sense, and you're a cocksure little fucker.

I second the emotions of everyone who knows what they're talking in this thread. You're a fucking moron for buying a pimp-ass camera and then shooting yourself in the foot by mounting a shit-ass lens on it. Listen faggot, photos are made by the LENS, the camera is just a light-tight box. This has changed in the digital age, but not by much. The D300 may have insanely superior high ISO noise performance compared to my D50, but when we're both shooting at ISO 200, my pictures are going to blow yours out of the water, not just because you're a bad photographer, but because my excellent Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 will eat your Nikkor kit lens for breakfast. It'll have better contrast, color, sharpness, bokeh, and depth of field control.

Get a D80, get a set of decent primes or a pro zoom, and get the fuck out of my /p/.

When I got my D80, I got the cheap 18-55mm basically as a throw in. I sold it several months later (unused) to some guy who was planning on getting a D200. It's a decent lens, but why why why would you pair a cheap $100 zoom lens with a $1700 camera? Just thought I'd share.

Ken Rockwell actually compares the 100$ Nikon 18-55 to the 1000$ The 17-55mm f/2.8 and says "(the f/2.8) is OK, but has more distortion, weighs almost four times as much and costs over ten times as much as this 18-55mm. " I know that you are all better photographers than Ken, and have experience with WAY more lenses than him, but still.
The 50mm/1.8 needs no introduction.
Apparantly you people don't have any experience with those lenses, and probably most of you don't have any experience with other lenses. All of the assault was directed at me, and none at the lenses, I take it as /p/s special way of saying "go for it".
The angry woman in the story is my lovely wife, not my mom. I wish the kid in the pictures was me because he is the happiest kid I know, but he is my son. Bottom line on my paycheck from September was just under 6000$ so yes I have more money than sense, my wife works as well and buying the camera is really not going to be noticed in my budget. Angry woman is also not that angry, but "we" agreed that 10,000 Danish Kroner are enough to spend on a new toy for me (which unfortunately sums up to 1800$ plus change). When they finally have the 18-200VR in stock here I would get it just to make all of you happy, and afterwards some nice primes.
I hope that this explains everything for you guys, and that you can all relax now.
I appologize for adding certain elements of humor or drama into my posts, which obviously offended you and caused you to reply in such manner. I am admittadly bored.

Taking good pictures and being able to write an objective review are 2 seperate things,

also, For fucks sake don't get the 18-55, If you don't need the wide aperture of f2.8, get the 18-70 f3.5-f.5, Its sharper, faster and has less distortion and vignetting than the craptacular 18-55.

also, buy a used D200
