Hay /p/, in addition to the f100 I'm currently paying off; i've extremely randomly aquired an Nikon 6006 for Free with two lenses (hot damn I love people who switch to digital and dont' care bout their film cameras anymore) :D. Is it worth keeping, or should I stuff it in the closet?

Free gear is always nice!

Though, I'd say forget about sticking it in the closet. What's the point?

Either go out and shoot with it, or if you don't want to use it then sell it and put the money towards something that you will use.

Simple Curiosity. It's actually coming from this guys closet!

PROTIP: Mention to people you're into photography and love film. You never know what you'll get.

Anyway, I'll def take it out since it's completely free. I can't believe the dude is gonna just give it to me, but, hey! I was curious if anyone else had one, had ever used one and can give any potential problems with it. I run a LOT of film through my cameras. I guess this will give me three camera bodies instead of just one! I'm hoping for a decent digital for christmas, too, so I can go hybrid for weddings and such.

i have one of those. the only problem is that once the camera goes idle, the only way i can get it back is to turn it off then back on. pushing the button halfway doesnt bring it back to life, but it still AFs after i turn it back on. it was never used that much, so i was kinda sad. my dad gave it to me with a 50mm f/1.4 though, so i just took the lens and im a happy camper lol

Free is always a good price to get it at. Can't do any harm to have a back up. Maybe you could cart around two bodies with a different lens on each. Try not to end up like that guy with the knee pads posted earlier.

woman pictured is NOT a trap, or the guy, it's just a random pic, btw.

I'll actually end up having three bodies, All Nikon, when all is said and done, lol. Now i can load one with b/w, one with color print and one with color slide :D

how long did it take to go idle, out of curiosity? I turn my camera off while i'm not shooting and setting up the next shot.

I'm genuinely curious- I only have experience with digital- but why would you want both color print and color slides? I can understand "two different films," but why specifically one color slide and one color print?

about 3 seconds. its not all that fast a camera, but you dont really need speed with the kind of thing youre doing. its like 1.5 fps in CL mode and 3 in CH lol. i find the focusing to be sort of hit and miss sometimes. sometimes it goes right to focus, othertimes it misses and has to hunt back a bit.

Different film characteristics, I would think. Like print with neutral colors for portraits, and velvia for other stuff. That's my guess.

I actually prefer slides only, but sometimes (rarely, but sometimes) it comes in handy to have both print and slide- both films offer different things, different grains and different looks. In the case of yesterday afternoon, I was shooting two to three models at one time. Some of the girls outfits required me to use Astia, some i wanted to do in b/w (which i never got a chance to do :( ) and still others I wanted to use the Vivid Color negative or Velvia for creepy crazy shots. More camera bodies, more opportunity, may as well put them all to use :D

Or, like, i'll load a set of Astia in all the bodies and when one runs out, just switch right to the next one.

i found the metering pretty good though. matrix metered in aperture priority outside on a bright day. crappy flatbed scan.

What you need is a Minolta 9 so you can hot swap 6 different films.

Seriously, but it is still $600 2nd hand.

I'm completely Nikon based, though. All my lenses are Nikon and I love how they feel in my hands. Heh, i also don't shoot THAT many films and most of the time the model is happy for the break and the change since we use that time to move her to a different location. Not that it takes me that long to do so, but it gives her/him a chance to drink some water.

it's also way too big and heavy for it to be worthwhile for me to carry. Try balancing on the side of a really steep hill trying to take pitures and so on.

three bodies each with dif. film is what I did for a long time, too. when I started using an F4, though, all my other Nikons felt *way* too light. I also don't shoot slides anywhere near as often anymore, so F4 for black and white, D80 for color, with several rolls of color just in case.

so to finish: if you don't mind carrying multiple bodies, I never had an issue other than having accessories for the each one (like if a cable-release fits two but not the third and the film in the third is what you want for a specific long exposure or something)
