So /p/.

Waifu and I are headed off to Japan for a visit with the in-laws in May (one of whom is now taking the long dirt nap and is the impetus for this transoceanic trek). I may (or may not) have convinced the Accounting Department (read: wife) to allow the acquisition of approximately $1,200 worth of Canon glass. Further complicating this issue is the fact that she (for some bizarre reason that makes sense only in the mind of a Japanese woman) believes purchasing a used/new lens in Japan is superior to doing the same in the United States.

The first question is, where do I go?

I'd like to avoid Bic and Sakuradaya, and am interested in somewhere in the Kanto region (preferably near Ogikubo) that I might be able to find something nice to bring back. Trains and directions are not a problem as I am quasi-literate in Moon. Websites would be nice so that I can at least get a grasp on where these places might be.

First hand experience is obviously preferred.

Second, I've already got a 24-105 IS f/4L, and was thinking about the 16-35 f/2.8L.

Suggestions?

unless you have a 5d/1ds/film camera or plan on getting one, the 16-35 is just about the stupidest lens you can buy for the money

I know a professional who got it a few weeks ago for a 5D and 40D outfit he has. Everything I've heard has been good, but I haven't heard much.

Why? Ultrawide to a long normal sounds pretty good to me.

"It" being the 16-35/2.8.

because for $1,400 or however much it costs in japan, there are better options for crop cameras

ef-s 17-55 2.8 IS namely

Yodobashi? Or just wander around Akiba.

Just compare prices very carefully. Dollar is ridiculously weak right now, which makes everything overseas more expensive to you.

catch is, hes not using a crop camera.

id suggest the 12-24 as well, no i dont have a 35mm slr or that lens, but seeing as you suggested a wide angle you already have a 24-105 it seems to fit nicely.

have you considered getting a new body?
also, it probably is better to get the lens in japan isnt it? condsidering theyre made there it seems logical it should cost less?

Give that you're looking to use an EOS 3, I'd probably say go with a 70-200 series lens. Pick your budget ($600, $900, $1000, $1400) and profit (the lenses in question are the f/4L, f/4L IS, f/2.8L, f/2.8L IS respectively).

Personally, with a film camera, the 16-35 is nice, but I'd rather have more reach than width. That's just a thought, though.

Ah, what the hell, I can be more helpful than that.

I bought my used G7 from an Osaka Den Den Town branch of Janpara. They have like a dozen shops in Tokyo: http://www.janpara.co.jp/shop_info/

The site has some kind of list of lenses they have too, and at what prices. See if they have what you want. They had the best price on the G7 and it was in pristine condition. Your mileage may vary, etc.
