Hey /p/.

I have a couple of newbie questions.

I found an old Zenit 122 some time ago in the cellar, similar to the one in the picture except the brand name is in Cyrillic script. Presumably made around 1990. I read somewhere that some Zenits' lightmeters were made of selenium and thus had a lifespan of around 15 years, does /p/ confirm?

Also, what would you suggest if I were to pick up photography with this camera?

it's nice to shot film, develop it, etc. But one day you'll get tired of spending money on film and development.
I don't tell you to bypass this opportunity to learn photo on film but I advise you that eventually you'll move (again?) to digital.
Don't hesitate to post here your results!!!!!1

I have never done photography, though of course I use a digital camera for daily use. One of the reasons I was thinking of using this is that I can't afford a DSLR camera right now. Would I have to develop the film myself? What specs should films I use with this camera have, keeping in mind I'm a total beginner?

i recommend you to start snapping and bringing the film to a development shop. And on the same time, learn about development.
Black and white development is much easier and error-friendly than color. So you can start here.
If you take your film to get developed to a shop, you can use whatever film you like.
Just mind the speed of the film (ISO/ASA). If you live in a shady place or you want to take photos of interiors, your country has few hours of sun... use 400ISO or up.
If you live in a sunny and full of light place, you can do with 100ISO.
Color or b&w, nevermind, whatever you like. Keep in mind that the second is easier to develop byyour self.

the weirdo...

this is actually a sad partial truth in today's age of cost-you-nothing digital pictures. i mean, one roll of 36 pictures is like 3 bucks. A good DSLR can take those 36 pictures in a few minutes.

I did find that a good compromise, though not a solution, is having your film processed, but don't buy any prints. Film processing is really cheap compared to processing and getting pictures back. that way you can pick and choose which pics to make prints later, or print them yourself, which I did, but only in B&W. good thing the ol college has darkrooms available.

of course, just moving on to digital would probably be cheapest in the long run.

no probably.

The 122 is a fucking great camera. Not too many speeds or ASA settings, but it's like a tank and the Helios 58mm f/2 has great optics. Load it with Agfa APX 100 (if you can find that stuff) and be amazed.

About the meter, it is not a selenium cell-based one, it takes batteries. Google around and you'll find which ones, they're cheap and easy to get.

Thanks for all the helpful information that I'm sure you've posted for the umpteenth time for newbies like myself.

I live in Turkey, so I guess I could do with 100ISO. Maybe something a tad higher for winter.

Yeah, I am aware of that. I will get a DSLR when I can afford one and when I know that I will be putting it to good use so it'll actually be worth the investment.
