In color photos, one has to balance both colors and lights/shadows, as opposed to balancing only lights/shadows in B&W ones. Thus making a color photograph look impressive is harder.
>> Will
>>195357
What?

>>195358
I hadn't ever thought of the need to balance colors against other colors. How do you even do that? A color wheel? Thank you for the thoughtful reply.

Besides trading some shutter time for a little smaller aperture (half a stop more DOF would help this a lot, I think) is there anything you can recommend?
>> Anonymous
>>195361
curves
>> Will
Actually, the lighting was pretty bland and I think my lens might've been fogging over or something. This is *after* I gave it some better contrast with curves. Any more and it starts to look too artificial. Obviously, my 18-55 just doesn't have the bokei to make the background look right, and the hard edges really detract from it, I think.
It's just two snapshots pano'd together, so I wasn't really giving it too much thought at capture time, I admit.
All you can eat strawberries, and you can bet I won't be taking pictures the whole time.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>195355

See if you can find a way to get that glaringly white sky out of there, it's extremely distracting. Try either a polarizing filter, zooming in closer on the berries, or at least a darker exposure.

Also try to keep an eye out for distracting things in the picture.. like those blooms on the left hand side that go in front of the strawberries which are the focus of the photo :)

Here's the left-hand shot. I thought the under-ripe berries provided a nice contrast.

A little better, unfortunately the unripe berries are totally blurred. Needs more dof.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j

they do, but if you want to contrast them, they all need to be in focus. Composition's better tho.
>> Anonymous
>>195361
The color wheel is like the rule of thirds. Some people abide by it, some shoot by intuition and get colors that contradict the canonical contrasts, but still look awesome.

His photos aren't all bad, the problem is that some of them are terrible and he gets super-butthurt whenever anyone criticizes him.

Also he can't shoot people worth shit. His models always look awkward and uncomfortable, which is probably because he's a 400lb mouth-breather.

But at least he isn't as bad as Beethy and his girlfriend's nipples.

This article explains it in sort of an elliptical way. Gimmicks are fun, but they kill art.

The things mentioned here- except Ken Rockwell's ultrawides and ultra-saturation, but just because he doesn't do well with them- are not gimmicks, they're consistent styles, which he talks about being good there. DC also uses a consistant style: 50mm, shallow depth of field, available light, a certain color palette and some other visual processing techniques. He's played around some- wider, longer, with a flash- but his best work is always in that same mode. Why? Like the article said- he settled on that, and stuck with it, to show us his subjects, generally people he's deeply interested in.
