Spots? Anonymous
Hey /p/,

I'm a newb at photography and recently got a Sony a100 DSLR. Last night I took a picture outside my bedroom window. I was just wondering what causes them little dark and light spots/marks?

Cheers ;)

Seriously? I didn't think it was that bad :-/

Yeah you appear to have a good few dead or stuck pixels....
Usually you can fix that... let me grab my A-100 and have a look and then I'll get back to you.

Just checked now and this pixel is on every picture :(

Ok well I noticed that you're using a reasonably long shutter speed. The A-100 has a 'noise reduction' setting which is designed to fix hot pixels when using longer exposures. Check that your Noise reduction is turned on (press the menu button and you'll see it.)
That should fix the hot pixels. If it doesn't, try reseting the camera to default settings (reset option is on the second page of the menu - press the menu button then press to the right and you'll see it.)
If this doesn't help, try taking it back and getting a new one.

One thing to note is that with long exposures on any digital camera, you _will_ get hot pixels. Don't expect to be able to shoot star trails, etc. with digital.
Best of luck,
H

Thanks very much for the advice :) . I turned off noise reduction after seeing some of the posterization of gradations. Looking at some of the other pictures I've taken with better lighting and flash etc it's next to invisible.

Ive never seen hot pixels with my A100, and ive been using 5' exposures. Even with the kit lense etc its been fine. This might be because i have noise reduction off or on (because my camera is in jp i have nfi) but ive never had any hot pixels, EVER. (i bet i get one next shot). Go find sony.

OP here.

Try a night scene or something very dark with a low ISO and long exposure because just looking at some of the reviews and such it seems to be a common problem.

Here's a picture I took today with no noise reduction on. As you can see (or not) there seems to be no hot pixels etc.

Is this final?

Fix'd. People do it all the time with Nikons and Canons.

you need to subtract a dark frame and then flat field to get rid of that stuff

I've done a 30 minute exposure with my D50. That camera is an unstoppable beast. I swear to god, it flinches at nothing.

OP again

Just checked some RAW shots I took on the same night and they have no spots at all apart from the 1 hot pixel in the lower left (no noise reduction was on at the time either). The RAW appears to be a vast improvement over the fine JPEG version. So star trails on the A100 = RAW :P.

Here's another picture I took today. This is my first DSL and only had it 2 weeks and I must say...I'm getting into photography ;)

Hmm.... If it wasn't so cloudy i'd try some star trails tonight with RAW and JPG and see how it reacts... I'll tell you what - if you guys want me to try some night shots I will, but I'm not wasting my time doing it for nothing, so if you want me to, say now.

I for one would like to see it :)
