because its not really photography. it looks less like a photograph and more like a rendering. its not the technique thats the problem, its the fact that people use it to turn boring pictures taken with lackluster skills into "photography".

its basically paint by numbers.

I've also heard people argue that photography itself isn't artistic, because its just pressing a button and such...

I think its just a matter of being a different style. It looks interesting, unique, and brings about a certain concept or feeling intended by the creator.

Ok well here's the secret to instant photoshoop success. I have this on an action so I can be awesome faster. Ok, so you take the 35mm prime lens flare and you stick it right in the center of the picture, then scoot it left a bit. Bump the intensity up to about 85%. Then go and click the quickmask button. Switch to a circular gradient and drag from the center to an edge. Then unclick quickmask. Now you have a perfect Vignetting zone. Click the paint bucket and slap some black in that bad boy. Or brown to look artsy. Your picture should now have the greatest vignette known to photography and earth and universe and all but we aren't done! Next go back into the lens flare after deselecting the Vignetting zone. Select Movie Prime and again intensity in the 80's of percents. Now this is my super secret trick I've never told anyone before. This took over 9000hrs of graduate level classes for my Doctorate in Shoopology. By the way call me Dr. Doitle lolz. Anyhow lolz go and rotate the canvas 45 degrees clock wise. LIEK WHAT THE SHIT RIGHT? Lolz. Now add ANOTHER movie prime lens flare. What the fuck is he mad? No I'm not. Now go and rotate it 45 degrees counter clock wise. You will have much canvas around your perfect shoop. You should crop it back to the original picture. Presto, you have the best shoop ever. The fucking brilliance of the triple lens flare combined with my patented rotato-potato trick in there is incomprehendable. Congratulations, you probably just blew your own head, and those of anyone around you, off.

true, it is just pushing a button. but before digital cameras, you had to be much more conservative with your button pushes. the technical aspects of the camera come into play as well as the environment variables.

now with a digital camera, you have an infinite number of tries to get your picture right. this should mean more practice and better overall photography. however thats not what is happening.

hdr is just another tool to enhance a bad shot. like photoshop. its easier to fix it on the computer than take the time to learn the techniques and take a decent picture.

i barely qualify as a hobbyist and i dont require anyone to critique my photos. im in it strictly for fun so i really cant criticize anyone else. this is just how i feel about.

also, i do believe that there are times when hdr is appropriate, but most people seem to not know at all when it is.

Nothing wrong with HDR itself.

It's just that most people who use the style suck at doing it, suck at photography, and have little sense of aesthetics apart from what gaudy visual trick will grab the most quick attention and the most gaudy awards.

The guy who said he worked exclusively in HDR that posted last week was good.

>before digital cameras, you had to be much more conservative with your button pushes.

No, not really. Anyone serious about it burned through film. Someone reupload that mini-documentary on HCB that Teus translated for us.

>now with a digital camera, you have an infinite number of tries to get your picture right.

Not if stuff is moving. Which is the case for anything involving people, any landscapes with fast clouds or a setting sun, etc.

>hdr is just another tool to enhance a bad shot. like photoshop. its easier to fix it on the computer than take the time to learn the techniques and take a decent picture.

So Ansel Adams in the darkroom was just fixing bad shots? Post-processing digital files is the same as developing and printing a negative, conceptually. Just 'cause we can get flat images out of the camera right away instead of by dropping the negatives off at Wal-Mart doesn't make those flat images any more authentic or whatnot.

Would this be considered HDR?

Cause I didn't take a picture and render it.

But I did use 2 different pictures to create it.
Curious.
