I used to shoot with an old Yashika TLR and I always liked the change of perspective of shooting from the hip and the way it allowed me to get very close to the ground and still have a lot of compositional control.

Is a right-angle viewfinder the closest to that I can get with a DSLR? I realize it would suck for shooting from the hip, but it would at least let me compose shots from the ground better I guess?

Aren't there adjustable ones? They are quite useful for those weird angles. I find it strange that since the 450D already has live view, they could at least give it a tilting LCD.

There are a few DSLRs that have swivel screens- I think a Sony has one, and the newest Panasonic has one.

To use an angle finder, you have to press your eye against the eyecup, so shooting with the camera close to the ground will be still pretty inconvenient because you'll have to lie in the prone position, and shooting from the hip will make you look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

With film SLRs, the best solution is to find a camera that allows you to install a waist-level finder instead of the prism, but I don't know of any digital SLRs that allow that. A tilt/swivel live view screen is good, but cameras with such a thing are currently limited to Four Thirds and Sony systems.

Something like the Zigview range might be okay for you. They have a few models.

It is a "money no object" solution, I suppose. The camera and screen are probably expensive.

surprised nobody has come up with a mirror attachment for the preview screen. would the image be upside down or something?

None on any decent DSLR.
And Sony ? decent.

I'm sure other brands will copy the idea eventually, at least for the entry level to start with.

I would like a tilt screen...and fast-focusing/tracking AF in LiveView. I can not has, but it'll be on my list when I'm camera shopping again in a few years.

I wish they still made SLRs with interchangeable finders like back in the day.
