Hey /p/

Is this a bad camera? I bought it around christmas time earlier this year and it hasn't seen a whole lot of use. I'm not a photofag but I'd at least like to learn how to use my $200 piece of equipment.

Can anyone point me to any resources for that sort of thing?

You really can't expect to learn a lot if you don't use your camera often. Although there really isn't much to learn with a point and shoot.

Research things like long exposure, exposure compensation, ISO sensitivity, etc

oh and shoot in manual mode. There isn't really a point to shooting in automatic when the camera sets the aperture and shutter for you.

theres no real point to manual on a point and shoot since f 2.8 and f 11 look the same, they're just basically built in nd filters..

Not quite. There's not much that can be done in terms of DOF, but there's a sweet spot for sharpness which you might want to go for if the lighting allows.

On many P&S's, it's just a built in ND filter that flips in place. My A550's is measured at around 3 stops so it goes from 2.6-7.1. The only way to change aperture is by zooming in.

Here are the comparison shots while I was helping port CHDK. The firmware would just round up or down the inputted value to decide whether or not to use the ND filter. It was fixed in the latest port.

Wow, I had no idea. Do you have any idea how common that is? Is it only lower-end models or what?

all the canon sd series cameras are excellent point and shoots. I got that one about 3 years ago when it came out and I got one of the latest ones 2 months ago and there wasn't much difference between them. Both very bery good is what I'm saying! You can easily take great photos with it, so do so then come back and share.

I just really have no idea what it means to do that or how to even use this camera effectively

That's why I was asking for some resources to get me started and no one delivered :/

put chdk on that camera and profit hard.

i dont have an sd card reader to load the firmware onto

The reason (I believe) point and shoots have such a large dof for all apertures is that the focal length is so short. On my A520, there is a notable difference in dof between f/2.6 and f/11, though.

it's cause of the teeeny sensor size

Yeah, it is. My Minox (shoots on 8.5mm film) has a depth of field that goes from 6 feet to infinity at f/3.5 because the film is so small. I believe it's because a normal lens on a smaller sensor/film is wider angle than on a large sensor/film, and wider angle lenses have comparatively greater depth of field.

This is why MF portraits work so well...
