What does /p/ think of the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Super Macro AF
Lens?
I just got a Nikon D80 and shoot mostly nature and landscape,
and loved shooting in the macro mode on my previous camera. The D80
came with the Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX lens and I
wanted to know if you guys thought it would be worth the $200 for
that Sigma. Or is there too much overlap between the it and the
lens I have to make it worthwhile?
In before "You should buy this $500 macro lens instead". I'm not
made of money, and just dropped a grand on the D80. Unless you
can make a recommendation on another macro lens thats under $300
thats worth getting on top of the lens I have, stick with the
original question.
If the Sigma isn't a worthwhile expense and I won't see any real
improvement over the lens I have without spending a ton more, then
Comment too long. Clickhereto view the full text.

depends on what you want

do you actually want a telephoto or a dedicated macro

nikon makes a shorter macro lens in 55 and 60mm i believe, i'm a canonfag

they should be around $300 or so

and those telephoto lenses labelled macro aren't really macro

they just focus closer to the subject

I want a dedicated true macro lens, which this Sigma, according to what you're saying, isn't. I'll look for a true dedicated macro a little later when I feel like dropping the $300 or so on a true one. Thanks for keeping me from dropping $200 on something I don't need. :]

Tamron 90mm f2.8 MAcro
look for one used, will be in the 300$ range

Avoid this sigma, its best is 1:2, and its a very difficult lens to use because thats at 300mm, and you are about 4.5 feet away from your subject. I bought mine for 90$ used, and sold it shortly thereafter. AF is SOOOOOO SLOW

off-topic: Why did you sell the Bigma?

Saw a Nikon 300mm f4 af-s for roughly the same price I could sell the Bigma for.
thats in the mail right now, should get it on monday.

I've seen what that lens can do and figured 420mm f5.6 (with my TC14e) Would be the same quality after cropping, OR better than the Bigma is at 500mm (f6.3)

That's not a Sigma. It's the Canon 70-300mm IS DO.
>> cool get rix
is this the APO DG Version? i have it in a canon body; so far so good. them 18-135 are good walkabout lenses so you dont have to monkey about with the lenses.. a 22-70 or equivalent macro lens might be a better complement.
