My friend was having camera problems so they had me look at it, I can't believe they didn't notice how serious it was. Anyway, they're images were all looking like the one to the right there. They're using a canon powershot that seems to have a broken sensor. Has anyone seen this before, can the sensor be fixed or do they need a new camera?
And I checked the Image stabilizer, it wasn't doing it.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess that this is un-fixable.
Or, rather, that it could maybe be fixed but that the cost of fixing it would be more than the cost of buying a new camera.

Also, this is FUCKING. AWESOME.
If I were you I would take a whole bunch of photos with this wickedly fucked up camera and then make a Flickr set of them.

If they're just going to throw it out I would love to have it. Broken electronics that still half-work are rad.

I know, it is a pretty wicked effect, but that's not quite what they're looking for.
Here's another one.

Pretty safe to say that camera is fucked.

Fucked, but in an awesome way. I haven't seen anything like this without expensive Hollywood special effects or my special "medicine".

Any P&S costs more to repair than it does to buy a new camera.

I know that sucks to hear, but I looked into getting a Powershot repaired about 3 years ago and the repair cost I was quoted was about $50 more than the camera cost new.

Can I haz it?

No give it to me.
I want it more.

looks like the sensor might be tilted(?) the photo looks stretched, and the pixels look separated.

I say this because I AM a stencil artist.

Borrow it from your friend for a bit. Or tell them it's too expensive to fix but can you have it for the awesome special FX.

Am I hearing any offers for the camera from London or Massachusetts area?
It's still not my camera tho, it's really up to my friends if they want to sell it.

Does it only look like this on photos or on the live view as well? What about video?
>> Anonymous
yea, the live view looks like this too, except it's smaller so it looks a little worse. I haven't checked video.

Pretty cool effects.

Have your friend send the camera in to Canon. This is a known issue with the S1 IS and they will give him a free new S5 IS to replace it. I did it with mine and sold the S5 for $300 on ebay. Here's a link to the Canon notice http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&keycode=2112&fcategory

Do that... ooooor... sell it on EBay as one of the uber-rare digital lomos out there. It crossprocesses automatically and gives you no level of control!

Funny thing is these messed up S1's have been selling for $200 on ebay because people know they can just send them in for an S5.

Congrats, your friend just made a camera that's instant deviantartish.

I've got an old P&S with a broken sensor too and the photos from it look shit, as opposed to kinda cool like yours.
>> I haz camera hurr !QgACNkSwFA
wow, that is pretty cool. My guess is that it has been dropped too many times, and that the filter screen is misaligned - ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayer_filter )
That's just a guess, though. It isn't like I'd know what the hell I'm talking about.

It's supposedly from exposure to high temperature - according to the Canon link.
