Dear /p/,
My college portfolio review is in 12 hours. Worst of all. Group interview. So I'm screwed if I am against someone with an amazing portfolio.

Any tips for acing these things?

Trying to get into FIT for those curious.

Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. (http://www.fitnyc.edu/) Photography there really has nothing to do with photography contrary to the name.

Basically, this is the guidance they gave me:

"Your portfolio should contain 15 to 20 pieces in any medium that communicate sensitivity to design, imagination, style, a diversity of subject matter, and commitment to creative experimentation. Evaluators prefer photos processed and printed that you have printed yourself, but commercially prepared work will be accepted. Photographs need not be related to fashion or advertising, but should reflect personal interests and should be presented in a neat and careful manner. You should be prepared to explain your interest in commercial and editorial photography at the in-person evaluation."

Take your most abstract stuff, and be prepared to bullshit a lot about the "abstract" nature of the object in 3 dimensional space. Try to keep a theme to your shots, And keep pictures minimalistic.
Use a lot of words like, Contrast, Edges, Shading, Emphasis, Flow. Lots of adjectives that are hard to decipher when taken out of proper context, or truly understand.
That sort of shit seems to impress the elitists, As for any firsthand knowledge of FIT, I have none.

Thanks for the help!

Looks like it's primarily a design/textile school. The photography program only has descriptions regarding its AAS track finished. It's probably a newish addition-
Can you afford it?
Is your work OK, technically?

You'll probably get in.

Any particular reason you didn't apply to RIT? :P

Typically, what I've noticed is that if you look at the old work done by students in any college information handout book, is that the work in there is typically horrible.

Yeah my work is pretty decent technically I think at least. I could be wrong.

I'll let you be the judge. I had to pick 20 of the out of the ones I had so the many that are bad in there, you need not worry about them appearing in my portfolio. ;p

These are the only ones that I think can make a chance, the others aren't good enough.

Also:

"Photographs need not be related to fashion or advertising,"

Almost none are. But at least that's something you could get away with.
However, you're pretty much restricting yourself by only having two dimensional photography work.
Remember: any medium! So not only drawings, but also sculpts, etcetera etcetera.

Pro-tip: Don't pick the maximum. Pick 17, to show you're good at selecting and criticizing your own work.
