People + backlit background Anonymous
Hi /p/, in the picture, the ad space is backlit by neons and is a source of light. It's probably night time too with street lights around.

If someone were to stand in this picture, I'm wondering how I would expose it so that the person is well lit and I would still see the details on the bus shelter.

If I expose for the subject, wouldn't the ad space be more or less washed out since it's shining light throughout my exposure?

Do I do some exposure bracketing and layer it all in Photoshop? Blend a properly exposed subject with one exposed with the ad space in view.

Do I use flash, no flash?

Classic example of a time to use flash. On-camera won't work very well, but a properly balanced off-camera flash would be good.

I do have an external flash, the Canon 430EX.

But this is outdoors so hmm, how do I make it 'not' look like flash? I can't bounce it anywhere. Maybe to the wall behind me if there is one.

Would this be a good time for HDR?

Get it off-camera. Get a lighting stand and an umbrella and bounce it into that.

Setting up something like that is a bit too complicated in the street.

I want to do it quickly, in and out, so one is questions me or anything.

Anything less involved?

A sync cord, and assistant, and a diffuser. Have the assistant hold the flash with attached diffuser where it needs to be. You might even be able to do it yourself, depending on how far away the flash needs to be to get the look you want.
