I've been thinking of getting a nifty fifty (50mm 1.8) for my 400D, because primes force you to be more active and creative in the shooting process. This doesn't guarantee good pictures in the least, but a lot can be learned using on of these (I think).

2. Because of the sensor using a smaller part of the image circle provided by the lens, will it have a larger sweet spot than it would have on a full frame camera?

tia

I did some reading on the subject, but I still have some things I need you to verify.

1. Using an EF 50mm prime on an aps-c sensor will give it an effective focal length of say 85mm. Is this good for street photography/UrbEx shooting? or do I need to go for a 35mm EF lens?

something seems to have fucked up the post layout, you'll get it

2. Yes. The edges will be a little bit sharper on a crop camera. I don't think it makes that much of a difference with a design like the 50mm, though, since it's pretty much excellent edge to edge already.
1. 85mm-equiv is a bit long for street photography, but not unmanageable. Wide is preferred, but you can certainly do it with a short tele. It's mostly just things like long teles that are (a) really approved of by newbies who are afraid of taking pictures of people anywhere near them and (b) decried by non-newbies because it makes you look like a creepy stalker hiding in the shadows and makes your photos look like they were taken by a creepy stalker hiding in the shadows. But 50mm on crop isn't too bad.

It is difficult to shoot from the hip with that length, though (at least at first. I'm sure it gets easier with practice, I just haven't taken the time to practice shooting from the hip at that particular focal length).

You might want to try setting your kit lens (assuming you have the kit lens) to 24mm or so and just telling yourself not to touch it for street photography.

it is cheap enough that buying it and trying it is easier than asking for /p/'s opinion

besides, if you sell it on craigslist, you can sell it for 20 bucks under what you paid for it new

Yeah, Canon lenses aren't good enough to hammer nails. However, I've used my 50/1.8 for about three years now as a lens with no problems.

What exactly were you doing with them that you broke three? And over what time period?

Not a lot of people know this, but there was a fifth plane on 9/11 targeted at the White House. Fortunately, there was a tourist there that day with an old Nikon F3--When the plane came down, he just swung it around and deflected the plane into the sea with it. Still worked perfectly afterwards, too.

And on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania- the only reason they could overpower the hijackers was because of two Nikons aboard: one an F5, the other a mere digicam carried by a soccer mom. That little Coolpix knocked Ahmed out cold.

A 50mm is a poor walk around lens because it isn't nearly as impressive as a L series zoom when you are trying to make people think you are cool with your massive pro photographer gear.

Remember, the size of your lens is equal to the size of you dick, so since the 50mm 1.8 is the smallest lens canon makes, it is not the thing that you want people to see you walking around with.

Yeah, they can be shorter, too.

I've shot with a 50/1.4 on Canon crop, and it definitely felt shorter than ~85mm equivalent. Never shot with an 80mm lens, so I can't say relative to that.

Question: does anyone know where one can find true focal length data for Canons, Nikkors, Pentaxes, etc? Leica publishes theirs on their website, Zeiss usually does, I can never find it for anyone else.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ

I seem to remember a site where someone went and tested and compared a lot of lenses. Was surprising to see just how much of a difference there could be with them all, even if they were supposed to be the same if you went by their given lengths.

That's impressive - I didn't know the 1.8 had pedals.

On a Nikon, however, you could have crossed the ocean too.

I was in a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler while holding my Nikon. I came out of it in one piece, needing nothing more than a pedicure for a broken nail, but the driver of the truck could only get meals through a straw for six months and had to have fifty three metal pins put into his legs alone.

I can still take great pictures of my cat with the same Nikon too.
