Hay /p/hotoshopers, I need halp. I've got this picture here that I have been asked to fix up, mainly the featureless shadow of a face because of stupid over exposure. My question is, since it's unarguably hard as shit to fix stuff like this (for me at least), what can I do to make it as best as it can be? I love you /p/, don't fail me now <3

Depending on how experienced you are with photo shop, and I'm guessing not very, try this, it may or may not help you but its simple and quick.

Duplicate the layer, press control+l to bring up the levels and move the middle and right sliders to the left and see if the shadows get any brighter mess around with them until the shadowed parts look better, don't worry about the rest of the image.

Then, put a layer mask on this layer, fill it with black then start painting the shadows with the paint brush set to white.

You could also change the brightness and contrast instead of using levels but doing the same layer mask thing.

And the best part is the original layer remains untouched

agreed.

Mess with the levels.

If you have trouble post the original and I can try to fix it when I get home. You can even say you did it. I don't care.

I would probably select the areas with the lasso tool, feather the selection a bit and then use a function called shadow/higlight. It can be used to bring up details in shadows without disrupting the highlights. You can also modify stuff like radius and tonal width to vary the result.

Just experiment with it...

Oh and btw, can be found under Image/Adjustments

I would just quick mask the dark parts, inverse the selection, make a levels adjustment layer
then you can gaussian blur the adjustment layer mask to make the adjustment less noticeable.

Hey thanks for the replies, /p/. I did a little work on it before, but that is on a different computer and I am not at home at the moment, so I only have the orignial scan, to see if you guys can play with it and see what else I can do. I didn't get much progress, but thanks a lot for the tipz. And since the internets I am at time out at uploads larger than 1mb, I put it on another site, here you go, and thanks

Try multiplying the layer and then making it a screen. Then use a layer mask to get the selection just right and mess with the opacity.
