Rave Images NGT
Shot another Rave last night, here's a couple pix that came out. I use a hand held flash with a diffuser - it was pitch black in there, focusing nightmare. Thoughts?

make it look more like it's night. stop down on the flash.
>> Vincent !!8LCSE0Zp1mL
Good job taking in an off camera flash, However use the flash for FILL, and let a bit of the natural lighting burn in.
F5.6 is ok, but leave the shutter open for like 1/4 of a second or something, then the flash will stop the subject and the natural lighting will fill in the rest.
Also ya tone down the flash a bit if you are going to use that strategy.

Also you don't need (or even want) ISO 1600. if you are using a flash. shoot at like ISO 400. The flash has a lower limit, in that by the time the TTL metering activates the flash will have put out too much light and you have overexposed your pic anyway.

Try firing a flash in a small room at f1.8 and ISO 1600, No matter what the TTL settings are it will overexpose. You may have done this by setting your cam to ISO 1600.

>>142040

Vincent, you are exactly correct. OP is taken at 400, and the rest are at 1600. I made the super amateur mistake of shooting at 400 with flash, then going flashless halfway through at 1600 for the glowstick 1/6th of a second shots, then FORGETTING to go back to 400...(the images looked fine on the LCD...grr).

I will definitely try to get more ambient light next time, thanks.

Id suggest the sigma 30mm f1.4 or the canon 50 f 1.4, but thats just my style, also, might want to use less flash/longer exposure times next time so you can soak up more ambient light.

Next time you go, for portraits try using f3.5 or f 4.0, 1/10th sec exposure, iso 800, and the flash on ettl. This is what has worked well for me. Its will look alot more natural because you can soak up alot of extra ambient light.

Canon 50mm 1.8 should be at my door tomorrow. I'm really pissed it didn't make it here before the show, specifically so I can shoot flashless at these types of shows.
Tell you the truth it was literally pitch black there last night, they had a green laser on sometimes...
I've been using this Sigma 28-90 for 10 yrs...

That lens is great, it what I shot a show on saturday with, its very capable. Unfortunately sometimes you have to use flash, but the settings I listed above should work well.

nice pics chad! :)

Chad thanks for the great advise. I checked out your Gabriel and Dresden album and all the shots had a real nice natural look to them. Thanks for the settings.

if it really is pitch black, it won't even focus correctly

specially since you have the XT without the high sensitivity AF point

Get a flash with a focus assist beam, you going to be using the flash for portraits if its that dark anyway, I use a 580ex2 with. Using the dj's are somewhat lit up, enough to achieve focus anyway.

>>142059

he said flashless, genius

and you can't fire the AF beam without firing the flash on XT/XTi
>> Anonymous
>>142062

well, you can except you have to turn the flash off after you've focused, lulz
>> Anonymous
>>142062
Sorry, I missed that detail. If your subjects are really dark, you wont be able to focus on them anyway even with the f1.8. My setup i use is to shoot the majority of the event flashless, as I can do artist/performers without flash and crowd shots flashless, but portraits I use flash. You can take multiple shots of artist/the crowd and pick and choose what came out, but you usually only get one or two chances to get your portrait. Just suggestions here guys....

1. Look at subject.
2. Estimate distance.
3. Look at lens.
4. Twist the focusing ring to the right distance.
5. Curse yourself until you good at it.

GL doing that without a ruler at f/1.8 and lower. SMALL DOF IS SMALL.

have fun manual focusing on a XT/XTi when it's pitch black
>> Anonymous
>>142073
The difficulty of focusing by distance is unaffected by the viewfinder. The post before you has a valid point, but sometimes a little inaccuracy is worth not flashing a focus assist light at the person before hand. Different techniques for different situations.

Lol, with the hectic pace of a rave, with people dancing and bouncing around, I'm not sure how well that would work, especially at f1.4 or f1.8....

i've tried to shoot in that lighting soo many times and it has always been a shitshow.. ide show you some of the shots i took on my old nikon 35mm but im too lazy to scan the bad pictures and the good ones ended up destroyed.

i have gotten way better at it since i picked up a D100 a while back and can adjust my settings over a few shots.. i guess that means i suck tho :)

>>142044
easily the best shot (not because of asses and dreadlocks)

P.S. Nikonfag has been toying with a friends D70 and it likes to tell me when flash is going to be used... i shake my fist every time it pops up. any way to disable that? i never use direct flash.

Easy, Dont use Auto mode...

>>142121
wow.. yeah im not used to my slr having portrait, landscape, macro and auto mode crap on the wheel... it works way better in A S or M. thanks ill stay away from the other half of the wheel i guess.
>> thefamilyman !!rTVzm2BgTOa

P is a good mode also, its like Auto but you can override it at any time. Also the flash doesn't pop up either. (I'm also an owner of a D70)

The first shot in the OP is kickass!

so this is nikonfag again, teh reason im playing with this girls d70 is because she is a dumbass and somehow twisted her nice lense on until it snapped and now overspins.... im trying to figure out what broke off so i can glue something on that might help. anyone dealt with a fool like this before or are a fool yourself?

Canon's EX flashes have the red focus assist lights. Helps focus 95% of the time. However if you are using the flash on a wire, it won't help.

Just for fun, ambient light photo from an industrial-themed rave attached.
