yo /p/, I'm thinking about getting a medium format, and i have a couple questions.
1. what is a good/ inexpensive (under $300 U.S.) and reliable camera?
2. how easy is it to make the jump in terms of precessing and making prints from 35mm to medium format?
>> Anonymous
Not a Hasselblad.
>> anonymous
*olga *wink*
>> Anonymous
1. Some kind of TLR probably
2. why would this be more difficult?
>> Anonymous
if your taking your 35mm to a lab finding one that prints from 120 is gonna be more involved.
If your doing it yourself your only issue will probably getting a new negative holder.
Don't know about reliable under $300 tho.
Theres Kievs, but that kinda blows away the whole reliable thang.

You'd be pretty close to getting a Pentax 645 with a normal lens from KEH for that sorta budget.

how much should I pay for a hasselblad from 1987 + zeiss 80 2.8 all in very good conditions? is 700 dollars a fair price?
>> Anonymous

hasselblad 500 C/M that is.

dude, if you don't get that, I might have to kick your ass. Just make sure that you actually use it.

Is this anon correct? sometimes I feel you guys are just evil bastards.

I think its going to be more and more painful to develop this format... unless you get a good Digital Back (which is bye bye $2000+).

The wider FoV will probably be fun to work with though... fuck these crop sensors.

The bodies themselves should be cheap ass hell. I've seen some Mamiya's go for like $400 on EBay.

listen, if you are good at photography, then it's the next step up in terms of quality. Besides, these are really good cameras.

If you're just "err deerp medium format" go buy a Lomo or something. This a great tool If you're not willing to buy bricks of 120 film and get them developed, don't bother.

I picked up 645 mostly so I could play with b/w at a cheap price point because I develop it on my own anyways. Make your decision. Here's Neopan 400 pushed to 12800 ISO. Note the grain. That's 5 stop push. That's why Medium Format is awesome. Also borkeh.

It's Hasselblad and Zeiss...
>> Anonymous
>>287582

People pay that much for Zeiss lens alone... it's almost as if the body is being thrown in there.

>>287590

good christ man, you must have been developing for over an hour.

>>287590

I see you are a fan of the "bucket of pubes and dust with extra scratches" method of developing.

If you mean the "scan like you don't care" school of thought, then yes. I scan to preview my grain. I print what I like.

I've had my Kiev 88CM for 5 years now. I've got the 80mm Arsat, the 30mm Arsat, and a Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm Flektogon. I've used it quite alot, but certainly not in a professional setting, and perhaps if that's where you will be using your camera then get something more expensive/reliable.

I haven't had to make any repairs, but I'm aware that some people have a hell of a time with them, and have light leaks, spacing problems, and contrast issues. In the end, if you want to learn about photography, you can't go wrong with a Hassie, but in my experience, I don't think I've missed out by having a Kiev.

I took this photo on Kodak E100VS with the 30mm, and while I know tastes differ here, I think the result is quite good. It looks better in real life than scanned I think.

I like this one better! Nice. Hey would this wouldn't happen to be Real de Catorce would it?

Yes, it's Real de 14.

I took lots of pictures with the Kiev during that trip, and went home and was surprised at the quality of the images. If I'd known how nice the E100VS was going to turn out that night I'd have stayed there for a lot longer. As it was, I was just there for under 30 minutes.

I also shot a couple of rolls of Ilford Pan F, but I had left the filters for the 30mm lens at home, so the sky is washed out in a bunch of the photos that I took during the middle of the day.

This next photo is on a different roll of E100VS, but it was shot with the 80mm Arsat. The tower looks a little over-exposed, but I think the rest of the photo is Ok. The thing that I found funny in Real de Catorce was that none of the buildings are level with each other. If you get one building level in a photo, the other ones look crooked. It was mind boggling.

Do like. Nice composition, sky looks amazing, just overall nice in general. Probably the result of your scanner or how the camera produces the images (I'm not too knowledgeable on what effects / film each camera give) but here's a quick edit I did to it.

Interesting. I've never been there, but I've heard it's a very special little town. Clearly very scenic too.
>> Anonymous
>>289866

E100VS is slide film that produces notoriously saturated images. I think it's better for skies and buildings than Velvia, but Velvia wins for grass, trees and landscapes.

I shoot digital as well but there's still something pretty cool about slides. Possessing slides is better than black and white or print film, because with those two you need to print them or scan them to see the image. And possessing film (any type) is better than holding compact flash.

I'm sure professional scanning could get better results. The lab printed both these images at 1meter x 1meter on Fuji Crystal Archive, but I don't know how they did it. Their prints looked better than my scan.

>>289875

One of the coolest things about the town is that it can only be accessed by a tunnel through the mountains. The tunnel allows cars in only one direction. So they have these "tunnel guards" that control tunnel traffic. The other weird thing is that there's no TV or mobile phone coverage due to the surrounding mountains.

I've seen a report/documentary on that place, but I hadn't thought about the radio reception issues. Did you get to photograph any of the local huicholes maybe?
>> Pentax 645 anonymous
well, Sebastiao Salgado uses this one, and its certainly not 300$ and below.. with 2 lenses ud pay more then 1000 EURO for it.
