I bought a cheap uv filter and regret it because of the lens flair i get shooting outside. i never use it.

i would go with b+h, hoya or tiffen.

it makes no difference

a $100 B+W will flare like a $10 Targus

it's all about your lens coating

While a lens hood is the best way to try and prevent flare, filter quality does make a difference.
I have a cheap 19.99 uv filter and a B+M and through the viewfinder they do seem the same, but once you load that picture and look at it on something bigger than the camera's LCD there is a difference.

but as far as the OP, what I would invest in is a lens hood, I wouldn't even bother with a UV filter. just be careful of how your handling the camera, and leave the lens cap on it when not in use for protection. The hood will also help in that category.

Sonolta lenses come standard with hoods.
