Sigma DP1

I'm looking at this cam for street photography and as something I can carry around at all times. Thoughts?

I currently have over a grand in my bank account and need something to spend it on, if that makes things easier.

Possibly. Consider you're fixed at 28mm equivalent focal length- do you like working at 28mm?

I've heard the raw write time is slow. Can you live with that? Look into that and its other specs.

I'd also consider a high-end small sensor camera. On one hand, smaller sensor = more noise. On the other, pretty much all of them have lenses at least a stop faster than this, and some of them more. The smaller sensor will give you more depth of field, usually what people want for street. A lot of them have faster write times. And to be honest, the Sigma doesn't look like it would be too comfortable to hold- small with no grip, whereas 90% of compacts have at least a little nub to tuck your finger on. Try getting your hands on one to see if you like it.

28mm f/4 - faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaail.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
As much as anyone, I wanted this to win. From everything I've heard though it was a huge failure.

At least Ricoh make some alternatives.

I'm perfectly cool with 28mm, and I've heard its a fairly good lens outside of not being any brighter than f/4. The RAW time is supposedly really dependent on the SD card speed, and turning off the preview is supposed to do wonders.

Outside of this I'm also looking at the Canon G9, Ricoh GX100 and Nikon P5000

OP here

I guess a should of mentioned that I have a D200 and several film SLRs/rangefinders. I specifically want something compact and digital.

got a point, and compared to a p&s olympus + pancaek is still huge

If you're checking out alternatives and you know how to take photos using proper settings, and you want a wide angle compact you gotta get the Ricoh Gr Digital II. It has no noise reduction AT ALL, so at high ISO's you get sharpest possible, with plenty of grain. If you're not set on wide angle then the Canon G9 is the Best by FAR.

Not entirely true. The GR-D2 is actually noisier than the GR-D. It's got numerous other advantages though, and wouldn't be a bad choice.

This is a pretty sick deal on a GR-D though. The lens is fully a stop and a third faster than the Sigma, though the Sigma has the better sensor. However, the Sigma's also more expensive, so take your pick. I fucking love my Ricoh though, as weatherreport so accurately lampooned.

The price difference really doesn't make a difference to me.

The thing that concerns me about the Ricoh is the noise, although if its not too bad at 400 then I can live with it. At the same time it goes up to 1600, which is a nice plus.

Both seem to have pretty quality build and optics.

From what I can remember, people actually like the noise in the Ricoh, saying that it closely resembles those of film (grain)

I have softened a bit on the DP1. Crap as a normal-use camera, still, but I'll grant that it would be a great street/documentary photography camera.

I'd like it a hell of a lot more with a 35mm f/2.8 equiv.

I would've bought it the day it came out if it had a 40-45mm equivalent lens, even if it was f/4, and if it had a shoe-mounted EVF option, like some Ricohs had, for when I wanted TTL framing and didn't want to hold it in front of my face.

Apparently the Luminous Landscape people were thinking about the DP1 today, too.
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sigma-dp1.shtml

Also: Apparently Sigma fucked up just about every other aspect of making a good photographic tool with this, too.

I wish someone like Ricoh would make an APS-C compact. I think they could actually do a good job with it.
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ

Considering all the delays and waiting for this camera I am surprised they managed to fuck it up so badly. They may have gotten away with this camera two or so years ago. Now it seems much less appealing.

Damn you Sigma for screwing this up. It could have been great.

Why Ricoh? I'd rather see someone of the big five make a compact with an APS sensor (4/3 is probably fine too).
>> EvenSteven !!RBDL+S5h60X
So I've done some more research

It seems like the dp1 has great image quality, but sucks the big one when it comes to handling.

Looks like I'm may pick up the GRD2.

ISO SELECTION VIA MENU ONLY?
FOCUS POINT SELECTION VIA MENU ONLY?
ONE STOP NOISE ADVANTAGE OVER A G9 WITH A SENSOR 5X SMALLER?
RAW WRITE SPEED AS SLOW AS ON A REGULAR P&S?

WHAT THE FUCK, SIGMA

>Why Ricoh? I'd rather see someone of the big five make a compact with an APS sensor (4/3 is probably fine too).
Because based on everything I've heard about Ricoh compacts, they've got Godlike ergonomics and controls. Canon's compacts aren't bad, and certainly best in their price range, but the Ricoh GX100 looks like an absolute dream to use with dual control wheels and a nice grip while the G9 looks like just another average P&S digicam.

Pretty much

Ricoh seems to have designed their cameras for people who know what they're doing.
