OP here.

Something's strange. I viewed it in Windows and it had a nasty gradient around the bokeh, but in OS X it looks fine.

It could also be that your monitor is physically incapable of displaying all of the colors. Some LCD panels can't handle a full range of colors, so they fake it by dithering.

Alternately, it could be the software used. Some JPEG renderers suck more than others.
