Dear /p/,

I need help. I have to photograph a baby next week (1year old), and all I have is a black background canvas and a flash (Speedlight 430EX). And possibly some white paper.
How do I create technically good photo, with soft and nice lighting? From where do I bounce it?

(Baby not related.)

You'd better use some softer color for the background... like light blue. For the flash, you can always use the white paper to diffuse it :p strobist should have some tutorial on DIY flash diffusers, or google. That should make light soft enough for a nice portrait.

This might be an unpopular answer, but forget the flash. Well-diffused it'll look fine, but one on-camera flash still isn't going to give you anything really special. (Trust me, it's what I've got.)

Instead, try taking the picture outside early in the morning or in the evening on an overcast day. If it has to be done inside, look for a North-facing window; a south one will usually do just as well. Set up the baby opposite the window, and chances are 9/10 you'll get some really pretty light. Painters almost always set up their studios to have a window facing North for that exact reason.

Doesn't sound like he owns a release cable.

I know diffusers are cheap and easy to make. I've got some.

Cloud-diffused sunlight and North window light, at the right time of day, works wonders for portrait lighting. If he needs a little more fill or pop than those give him, a little bit of diffused flash will do him well.

Of course I wasn't going to use direct flash. That would be horrible.
But the outside light was a good idea. Except I don't know is it usable, because day's length is only about 8 hours or so, and the sun wont rise very high...

Oh, sorry, Eku. I didn't notice your trip; if I had seen it, I wouldn't have gone all noob advice mode.

Low's actually better, IMO: the golden hours are low, and when it's low, the light will be going more directly onto the face.

There was an episode on photographing babies on DIY Network ("The Whole Picture") lately. The photographer mentioned that flash should be avoided with babies because they're very light-sensitive.
