After buying my D40 about 6 months I have to the conclusion I should sell it now and save myself a lot of money and hassle in the future. (lens compatability etc.)

However what should I get? My price range will be around £450.

I was thinking either:
a) D80
b) 450D
c) something else?

on jessops though the D80 seems pretty cheap and its the same pirce body only as it with a 18-55VR lolwat

D80 since you're used to Nikon's ergonomics already.

yes but the 450D is a much better camera
>> Anonymous
get the 450D its newer, get a battery grip, prime and a telephoto
>> Anonymous
I would say D80 since you already know the nikon layout, however 450D has a lot of newer features than the D80

I used a F801 for a few months and then started using a D40 while using friends' Nikons and my friend's Fuji S3.
I considered making the switch to canon recently (if I sold all of my equipment I could end up with a decent Canon system) but the interface of the 450D was too odd to me.
Oh and my friend's 450d made a weird whining noise after every shot and it was kinda distracting.

This is true by almost no standard that matters.

Get the D80.

what are the standards that matter?

Ergonomics and usability.
450D has moar megapickels, is slightly faster (3.5fps vs. 3fps), has live view, has built-in sensor cleaning, a larger monitor (3" vs. 2.5") and is lighter.
D80 has dual control wheels, a larger viewfinder (.94x vs. .87x) and more direct ability to choose your AF points. And most importantly, it's a Nikon so he'll have less of a learning curve.

OP here, I think I should that I have no addons for my D40 so keeping equipment for the D80is not applicable.

I tried the 450d in store and I have to say I found it pretty easy to use, when I tried the D80 it just felt like a bulkier layout to the D40.

If you like the 450D then go for it.
Good that there's something in your price range that you'd be happy about, better because you aren't tied to any equipment at the moment.
Be sure to get the 50mm f/1.8. Build quality seems cheaper/flimsier than Nikon's but it's outrageously cheap ($70 here) and my English teacher who shoots film swears by his.

>>266198
Fair enough. In that case, get the 450D.

>>266209
>>266205
yeah I will get the prime, and probably a grip if I can afford it as well.

what you were saying about the lense being cheaper/flimsier, this isn't the case with all canon lenses?
>> Anonymous
>>266212
btw is this the lense that come with the 450d?

cos I was considering getting body only and then getting the prime, but If I get a £160 lense for like only £40 for the kit thatsafuckinggooddeal
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>266212
It's not the case for all Canon lenses, no.

I'd recommend getting the 18-55 IS kit for the 450D. It's a good lens, and if you get *only* the 50/1.8 you're going to be really hurting for a wide/normal angle. 50mm on a crop sensor sucks as your only lens.

>>266194a larger viewfinder (.94x vs. .87x)

high magnification doesn't make your actual viewfinder bigger
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>266856
How so? Both have 95% viewfinder coverage, and viewfinder magnification is measured against the standard of a 50mm lens by both Nikon and Canon. What am I missing?

>>266868
1.6x versus 1.5x crop factor.

This makes it convenient:

>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>267059
Fair enough. I'll restate with numbers converted to account for the crop factors:

>D80 has [...] a larger viewfinder (.62x vs. .54x)

I forgot about the crop size difference in original post. Still, the difference in crop factor actually makes the D80 slightly more win, so my point stands.

Are you sure you're thinking about the 18-55 IS and not the 18-55 II? All reviews I've read say the IS version is surprisingly good.

lol ac posting as anon
>> Blackadder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
The 18-55 IS is a pretty solid upgrade from the old one. It's certainly worth distinguishing the two when discussing value for money or the quality of them.

As for the OP's question the D80 and 450D are both good. Go with the D80 if you're familiar with Nikon already. It's a lovely camera to use.

Samefag just trying to generate flames. It's equally likely.

Seriously why would I post that as anon? How do you think that a random anonymous poster agreeing with me without providing any evidence would help my argument? If people don't accept me as an authority on lenses--and they certainly should not--why the hell would someone accept Anon-goddamn-ymous?

keep your d40 and get the 18-200 vr

OP here, I'll see how much I can sell my D40 for first with the camera bag/filter/SD card and tripod I should be able to sell it all for £250

So I should have £500-550 to spend, the reason I'm gonna sell all my stuff is because I want to get a better SD card, and my friend works in jessops and can get my free bags/filters etc.

Saying that I came down to the conclusion of:

Second hand D80 w/ kit lens
New 450d w/ kit lens + f1.8/50mm
>> Anonymous
>>267181
***oh and its the 18-70mm kit lense with the D80 not the 18-55 as stated before.
>> Anonymous
>>267181
the 450d and prime, you have more lenses you already said you find it easy to use and you'll also have a warranty
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>267188
Second. Although I'm not sure if I'm seconding this for real reasons or just because I'm a canonfag, so take it with a grain of salt.

this is the answer you freaking moron. what do you need to do that the d40 can't do?
