Hey /p/,

I'm just getting into photography, learned all the basics about ISO, aperture, shutter speed etc.

I'd like some advice on framing shots and how to use white balance.

Pic related. First shot I got that I actually liked.

You need to learn a hell lot about lighting too or at least know how to make it work. Take your image for example, the person there is too dark.

Think about your shots. Don't just click click clickety away in the hope that a handful or at least one shot is good.

Press the WB button on your camera until it matches the kind of lighting in your place. Take a photo. Then press it until it doesn't match. Take another photo. Compare.

Framing shots: sorry, only 3% of the population is born with the ability to do this. The rest invent crap like the "rule of thirds", which is a cheap approximation.

Hey! Congrats on a great hobby.

About the pic:

Pay attention to the lines. Lines are the first thing a viewers eye will looks for, and it will naturally follow the lines in to the pic. In this shot the lines lead us to a wall, which feels wrong. Therefor the framing isnt too good in this pic. The person is placed perfectly. The spot has lots of potential. I like the pic. I like how the sun covers the persons legs. I like how things are repeating themselves. The squares and the lights (or whatever) are great.

You should go back there and try to get a nice abstract pic of the wall. I think it would be great. That would require better light conditions, though.

The person is out of focus, but you probably saw that yourself.

Thats pretty much just bullshit. As in any other thing, talent makes a difference, but also as in other things you CAN learn and get better. Alot better.

Aha, you fell into my logic trap.

More like "sarcasm doesnt do well online." Its like 90% accentuation.

Thanks for the responses guys. :)

Could you explain "the lines lead us to a wall"?

I did take a couple of the wall, but it seemed too boring. I think the person brought a little more life to the picture.

And I think the person is actually in focus, it's just that they were moving and the shutter speed was fairly low.

The lines in the roof leads us directly into the wall. Once you notice it, it actually starts feeling like a slap in the face.

Mind if I do some more examples?

I thought a candid of this guy working had some potential, but my pictures all felt very plain.

Could I fix this with better framing? If so, how? If not, what else is wrong/missing?

Ah, I think I see what you mean. So would cutting out a bunch of that ceiling space make it better, or is that just a "flaw" of the spot?

Yes, cropping would indeed make it better and less heavy in the top (as previously stated in a misposted reply)

I'd also add that the harsh edge of the shadow is another line which the eye naturally follows. In this case, where does it lead? Is there something interesting along it?

I'd probably have the person sitting in front of where she's standing at the moment, so she's fully in the light and the eye follows the edge of the shadow down to her. Either that or get her to lean against the wall at the other end of the light patch.

>>133113
Would be an ok shot but the colours are all grey or brown and therefore boring.

Get closer and lower. I don't care about the top of his head. I want to see his eyes.

Also, could always try playing with photoshop and see what happens. Could give ideas?

Kinda like post-visualizing :P

You should get a cheap DSLR. Not just for the camera itself, but because it WILL make you wanna take more pics, and you will feel like a photographer when youre doing it. That actually matters.

Hahaha. Oh wow. You actually spent some time on that, didn't you?
