what the fuck does it matter?
shooting at the sun ruined this picture.

Bad exposure and composition ruined the picture. Some flare didn't have anything to do with it.

In the 1940s (and '30s, etc.) lenses weren't coated, or at least not multi-coated, I'm not too up on the exact history of coatings. Regardless, shooting into the sun was one of those things you just weren't supposed to do.

OP here..
the sun isnt the focus of the shot..its the stairs and the greenery

Make better choices?

I'd start with composition since the alignment of lines on the stairs isn't so pleasant to stare at, then I'd probably shoot as so the sun wasn't the focal point of the image.

The sun pretty much becomes the focus of the shot. It draws the eyes to it, then it hurts them.

Well yeah, but it's so bright it distracts from everything else. An angle off to the right a little more, so the sun is off the frame, might've worked better.

Rule of 3rds. Your horizon is in the middle. Instant fail.

Straight into sun! My lens adapter was just a bit loose, and didn't tell the right aperture information. Of course I was too dumb to believe the bizarre values my exposure meter gave me. So I got nice flares + sun + 3-4EV overexposure!
