Hey /p/,
I just recently got into taking photographs, and even more recently started taking an interest in photographing people. These are some of the first I've taken (besides party pictures, doesn't matter), and are of my little cousin Renee. She was a good model but we've both got areas in need of improvement. Any ideas, criticism or comments? I'll post a few more after this one.

Also an amateur photographer; enjoy portrait photography as well, so if there are any flaws in this, sorry!
I noticed her elbow was cut off. Personally, it's a pet peeve of mine when this happens! Although, I completely understand it's an honest mistake and it seems somewhat spontaneous. Also, when taking pictures outside, the sky can get very cyan & shallow, without the depth of what the sky may actually look like! I'm not familiar with your camera other than the fact that it's a bridge, but if you can, invest in a polarizer so that the sky may look more realistic, and of course your photos will seem more dramatic! This should help with the overexposure of her hair at the top, as well, and with keeping the aperture small.
Now for good points! I like the way she was looking left, yet the majority of the subject was on the right, very symmetrical, draws the eye around well. Also nice depth of field, on bright sunny days like the one you took this on it can be rather annoying to have to resort to making the aperture smaller & ruining the portrait-like quality about a small DoF. :)

Tldr; Good symmetry, buy a polarizer & keep your apertures wide!

Photo unrelated, example of my work with portraits. Contrast adjusted, but other than that no post-processing.

i know you said you just started.....but to be honest up front, and coming from a photographer (myself - also a photolab supervisor) know that the first 2 show that you are an amateur. The 3rd is creative and well lit but the first 2 look like something you'd post on myspace. You have to remember to capture the person in a portrait...their personality and what makes them them.....its not just about taking a beautiful picture.....you have to capture something....thats what makes a picture a photograph
