No one uses film any more professionally unless they are fine art photographers. Get digital.

Digital is cheaper to learn most skills with. It also gives you the ability to review and adapt on the fly, instead of waiting for prints to find out what went right/wrong. Lastly, for starting up, digi stores your camera settings so you can review your photos long after and still know what options you used/fluked to get a certain effect.

Just my two cents.

Also, don't pay too much notice to the photosnobs who tell you to 'get a D300 and pro glass or gtfo'. They've long forgotten that everyone has to start somewhere

If your range is around 500 bucks, id go with the
Canon SX10 IS.

Also, id recommend an SLR when you have the money.

but tell the salespeople to fuck off and leave you alone. best bet is to go to a small non-franchise camera store. they are more likely to give you some peace instead of blabbering about megapixels and eye detection and whatever other gimmick their boss told them to push that month. figure out which cameras you like the feel/look of, then go home and do some research on their capabilities. then shop around for a decent price and always remember to bargain with the sales people, as their commission is generally what you're bargaining with

True 'nuff. I work in an amateur photography store (Any Canadafags out here, it's Black's Photography) and I can barely live with my co-workers brainwashing the customers into buying ZOMG PRO LEVEL 10 MEGAPIXULZZZ AWESOME compacts, and then coming into the back to blab about how many ZOMG PRO LEVEL MEGAPIXULZ the new EOS-1DS Mark III has. I work in the lab, and barely deal with any customers, by the way.
We don't make much commission, though, so it's not really that big a deal pricing-wise.

To OP, however, I'd say go with the Powershot G9 for now. It's a great compact, and offers you some versatility to play with aperture-priority, shutter-priority, and manual modes so you won't be another auto-mode photographer.

Q: How does one become a journalist in America?
A: Some editor hires you.

For a career in photojournalism, first find an editor who will pay you, then find out their image requirements. That may determine your camera choice.

G9 is great but S5 shits all over it in lens
