A few tips: find a nice angle, something that isn't completely perpendicular to your food. Limit your depth of field as much as possible. Fast glass helps here, but otherwise use as long a focal length as you can, space permitting. Lighting. Lighting lighting lighting. Without pleasant lighting, you won't get a good picture. How you interpret this is up to you, and it's what you need to train your eye to recognize more than anything. Try to get more than just the food in the shot. Not so much as to be distracting, like a person eating (ugh), but just a few details, like a glass, or the surroundings. In a nutshell, don't neglect your background.
Pic related: my lunch today! I highly recommend this place.
