Hi /p/

Eurofag here...

I can buy a Canon EOS 1000D for 600 € (765 $ plus 18-55 mm + 75-300 mm lenses until the 22 of November.

Is it worth it?

I wear glasses and sweat a lot, so Live View is a must. That means, no Nikon D40 et. al.

Thank you.

Look on eBay and the internet yourself and compare prices. Why should we Google it for you?

Idiot.

sage for gear faggotry.

>sweat a lot

wut??

anyway, canon cams take quite some time to focus in live-view, so you perhaps should think about 'nother cam.

what´s your eye-strenght? usually you can adjust the view-finder, but i found that sometimes you can´t "sharp" them enough if your eyes are toob ad.

you could also consider contact-lenses

I know about eBay, damnit.
I don't want to buy it there, period.
The store I'm talking about is at walking distance from my house and offers great costumer service. Thank you.

why so mean?
>> Anonymous
Liveview should be used from Manual Focusing (10x magnify). Fuck these shitty viewfinders.
>> Anonymous
If their customer service is so good, go there and and tell them to advise you.

There's way too many entry level threads here. I can deal with people having informed discussions about decent kit, but when you're gonna get a camera for shitty snapshots, don't bother us with your stupidity.

>wut??

Well, I don't want to smear my glasses and/or the LCD

The view finder against ur glasses -> ur glasses against ur face -> mess

Oh, and ur nose on the LCD too :p

>you could also consider contact-lenses

Not an option

>anyway, canon cams take quite some time to focus in live-view, so you perhaps should think about 'nother cam.

Not a problem, unless the delay is really dramatic.
Here's a live demonstration of the AF:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWHjZWvdtHw

[4:12 - 5:43]

There are two AF modes, neat.

So this is what I want:

- DSLR
- Decent Live View performance (not necessarily top-notch)
- Around 10 mega-plonkers

Win?
Thank you.

>Not a problem, unless the delay is really dramatic.

there are two modes:

1) supposed to be quite fast but your live-view will go black during the time it takes to focus

2) you´ll have your lv-preview while the cam takes focus, which often takes around 3 seconds

anyway, mode one is quite fast for live-view but loosing your image is annyoing, especially if you shot something that is moving, in which you wont see wether the object is in focus or not - or you wont get it sharp at all (with the second mode)

again, what´s your diopter (or however i ask that in english, what´s the value your eyes are off^^)? of course if they´re too "weak" to walk around without glasses than i would recommend a different camera (in that price-section only the sony 300/350 offer good live-view but i thik the canon will have the edge in picture quality at higher iso), if not, adjust the view-finder and use it

furthermore, when i use the view-finder (not this cam though), i dont press so hard against it that i touch my glasses with my face ;)
>> Anonymous
I bought mine for 58000yen
>> ?suomynonA ??????????
Heh I have glasses too, -5/-6 so I can't make up for it with the dioptre wheel. Maybe I (and the OP as well) should consider buying one of those extra strong extensions? Anyone able to recommend that?

For the OP, if you're gonna buy an SLR and use live view all the time, you're missing one of the main reasons people buy SLRs.
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
I also wear glasses and sweat a lot. It's less of a problem than you might think in terms of using a viewfinder.

(It is exactly as much of a problem as you might think socially)

>For the OP, if you're gonna buy an SLR and use live view all the time, you're missing one of the main reasons people buy SLRs.

well, yes and now (not op,>>289408), if you´ve got a decent live-view you can do lots of good shots with it.
you can shot from your hip which i find much more comfortable (especially if you shot people...-not with guns- you dont have to crouch). if you´re doing macro, no live-view sometimes is the biggest pain in the ass there is. (provided you can move the screen)

on the other hand, if it is bright outside, you wont see much and focus is always faster through the viewer
>> ?suomynonA ??????????
>>289417
i agree on shooting from the hip and the macro stuff. in that case though you're gonna want to have one of those displays you can pop out and move around which not many SLR cameras have afaik.
and yeah, sunlight is a bitch for live view.

>>289408

>1) supposed to be quite fast but your live-view will go black during the time it takes to focus

Yup, the display goes blank for a bit
Not even my crappy HP 945 does that!

>2) you´ll have your lv-preview while the cam takes focus, which often takes around 3 seconds

Clearly too much, but you can fine tune the exact point to focus on, an that's neat if you're shooting a static subject.

>again, what´s your diopter

Sorry, I don't remember the exact figures but it's myopia, so I don't feel comfortable going around without glasses, lol

>i would recommend a different camera (in that price-section only the sony 300/350 offer good live-view but i thik the canon will have the edge in picture quality at higher iso), if not, adjust the view-finder and use it

Checking the Sony A300/350 at DPreview right now...
If the Live View is more responsive (and that seems to be the case) it looks promising, indeed.
And not only the Live View is more responsive, the AF is more fast too, it seems. I can sacrifice a little picture quality in order to get that.

The Sony A300 is only 50 € below the 1000D (special offer) but I could try to get it from some other place.

>furthermore, when i use the view-finder (not this cam though), i dont press so hard against it that i touch my glasses with my face ;)

lol
The problem is, when I'm sweating the glasses slide over my nose, so you don't have to press too much for that to happen :p

Thanks, that was hepful

>Checking the Sony A300/350 at DPreview right now...

well, seeing as i own an A350 myself i can say i´m very satisfied with it.
the live-view is very nice, the tiltable screen is the icing on the cake
imho dpreview is...dont know, sometimes they seem a bit biased but well, i´m no expert on that ^^

>Clearly too much, but you can fine tune the exact point to focus on, an that's neat if you're shooting a static subject.

well, if i understood you correctly, i can assure you you can do that with most cams

>Sorry, I don't remember the exact figures but it's myopia, so I don't feel comfortable going around without glasses, lol

heh, me neither, you´ll miss out on too many things...

btw, if you dont mind 10 megapixls (which is very okay) i´d perhaps recommend the alpha 300 to you, i dont know wether the value for the money is much better than with the a350, but you rarely need that a high resolution and it comes with higher noise

>>289422

me again, just wanted to add something:

just go to a store and try out the different cameras, see which seems to be the most comfortable to you, checking out online-reviews is indeed helpfull, but it cant replace simply trying it out ;)

>>you can fine tune the exact point to focus on, an that's neat if you're shooting a static subject.
>well, if i understood you correctly, i can assure you you can do that with most cams
Not with most SLRs. Except for the latest crop of live-view SLRs, SLRs use phase-detect autofocus that requires actual bits of hardware to detect focus every place you'll want to focus. So you get like 9 or 11 (or absurd numbers like 51 in the high-end models) focus points where the camera can AF. With contrast-detect AF as used in P&S digital cameras and the latest live-view-equipped SLRs during live view, you can actually tell it to detect the contrast it's trying to detect anywhere on the frame.
>> Anonymous
>>289424

ah, alright, misunderstood that (though you can focus on the point you want and then keep the focus and just move the camera (tripod-alert)
>> Anonymous
>>289431

Yup, I used to do that with my crappy HP 945.
Bracket the subject, press the button half way, re-frame the picture and press all the way down.

Problem is, not only the focus gets locked, but the metering and everything else. The exposure could get terribly wrong in some cases.
>> Anonymous
>>289424So you get like 9 or 11 (or absurd numbers like 51 in the high-end models) focus points where the camera can AF.

Uh, your Wikipedia and DPR references must be off.

You can use phase detection with mirror flip (Quick AF) on any point of your screen. You're in no way limited to the AF points.

>>289436

not with my alpha 350 (ithas a seperate button to lock exposure and aperture)

I'm sorry you don't know how to use Live View or read the fucking manual.
>> Anonymous
>>289462

you know what, that is the single most - ridicioulus - point EVER to be critized on ANY camera.

first of all, when you use the view-finder, WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE THE URGE TO PRESS THAT BUTTON!? you dont even see it while looking through the ev

secondly, the button is not in the way and does not replace a more important button, nor will it hinder you while trying to take a picture when using the viewfinder aaaaand

when using manual focus in live-view, the digital tele button helps you greatly to achieve the best possible sharpness.
the live-view display is great, but alas, it is only so big and you can´t really notice if you´r slightly of focus, only later when you see the image on your pc screen.

but *TADAAAAA* why not use the digital tele button and see wether i´ve got the right focus or not?

or what would you suggest? opening the menu, click "digital teleconverter" then set "7mp" and then "enable" - ah damn, whatever you wanted to capture has now moved out of your freaking field of view
so basically, fuck you, you probably would have complained about the fact that electric bulbs cant be blown out like a candle...

Because it doesn't work when you're shooting RAW?

Specify a camera where you think that it works. I'll post the appropriate manual page. I checked the Nikon D90 and Sony A300/350, too. Or GTFO. Your call.

the digital zoom doesnt work when you´re shooting raw, sadely and strangely
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>289524
Not that strange. RAW is the raw image data from the sensor, un-fucked-with by the camera's processing software, after all. If it's cropped and resized, it's not really RAW.

Also not that sad. Just crop it when you get it onto a computer. Which gives you access to better resizing algorithms than they put in the camera, too, which is why it's such a fucking stupid button to have as a hard button on the back of the camera taking up prime real-estate where a useful function could be placed. It's like if Canon put the Direct Print button right under your thumb.

well, but imho the main advantage is when you focus manually while in live-view - then the digital zoom is extra handy to see wether you´ve got it right or not - though it is not too bad, because the camera tells you when you "in-focus"
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA
>>289537
All of the other cameras out there with live view have a way to zoom in without actually cropping the shot if you forget to zoom out before hitting the shutter button.
