So I'm tired of using a god damned Coolpix piece of shit for the serious photography I'd like to get into. Anyone recommend a good starter one that isn't just some shit for 13 year old girls?

2,300 for a beginner camera? Are you dicking me?

most important question: How much do you want to spend?

if you plan on moving up to a DSLR plan on spending at least $500-600 just for the body and a basic kit lens.

Under $700 if at all possible.

Go with the Pentax K200D. It beats the hell out of any entry level Canon or Nikon. The image stabilisation and sensor cleaning is far superior along with the image clarity and color depth. I think at wilddigital.com its like $450.

you can get an entry level dslr for 700.

read up a little before making your decision.

choices are probably canon Xsi is new and probably a little over your 700 limit. but the camera it just replaced the XTI is a nice camera for entry level, also look into the canon 1000D.

also the nikon equivalent is i believe the D60.

check out http://www.dpreview.com/ and look more into your camera options before making your decision.

also, when looking into your DSLR, think about the future, how far do you think you will go into photography gear?

stuff like lense's flash's etc, that you might buy over the time you own your entry level dslr will also be able to be used if you decide to upgrade the body in the future.

wait!!! i thought i deleted that, dont look into the 1000D..

I meant that you could find a canon XTI or its also called a 400D for the price your looking to spend. with that budget dont look into accessories just yet..

The entry level models from Pentax and Olympus will come with a better kit lens than those from Nikon or Canon, though there is a bigger selection of lenses from the last two.

A lot of people go Canon for the lens selection but TBH a lot of that selection is crap (even if you take the crap away Canon still has more selection).

which Coolpix? My 5700 has stopped working twice before I shot 500 pictures.

Get a used rebel xti or a nikon d50 or d70s and buy a really good lens for it.

i still dont see that as being an incredibly valid argument. olympus has a good selection of lenses, the only problem being they dont have many primes.
the lens selection is very easy to follow, and most it covers all the bases ( wide - telephoto), and im sure they will be coming out with more primes, fast primes, and fast zooms.
but everyone knows they have great glass.
the major downfall i see to olympus is that they dont have a full frame as of yet ( atleast not to my knowledge but i havent done much research because i doubt il ever get one) but thats only a problem if you can honestly see yourself getting one.

Olympus' logic is that 4/3 is full frame for them.

lol

HOW MANY OF THESE THREADS DO WE NEED!??!

well then i guess that leaves them room to improve sensors....
im being unusually optimistic right now.

olympus makes rectal cameras

thats how you know they are good
>> Anonymous
>>220759the major downfall i see to olympus is that they dont have a full frame

reasons why i wouldn't buy olympus

small and dim viewfinders
limited dynamic range
horrendous user interface
poor high sensitivity performance
can't rent lenses locally
limited (new) lens catalog

all entry level dslrs have shitty viewfinders, but i havent used anything but my e-510 and an xt so i guess my experience there is limited.

i find the interface EXTREMELY easy to use, and not to mention that thats a bad point because no matter what camera you get your going to get used to the interface.

as far as lens shit goes, im sure theres some place you can rent them, and new lenses will be coming out.

and for the other stuff i dont know what your talking about, i know the words but i dont know facts because i dont look that shit up.

the fact is olympus makes good cameras and people need to stop shitting on them and get over themselves. and the fact that i bought a e-510 and 2 of the better or best kit lenses available for less than i could have gotten an xti with one shitty kit lens is definately a perk.

>small and dim viewfinders
As has been said, all entry level viewfinders suck. Though, quite frankly all cropped sensor viewfinders suck. I've no experience with FF dslrs, but I do have a k10d which is touted as having a very good finder, and compared to my OM-1 it's just depressing. The difference between my k10d and my e-400 is negligable in comparison. If your primary concern is viewfinders you should forget about digital.

>limited dynamic range
The entry level Olys lack about 0.7 stops compared to competition, while the e-3 supposedly has about the same. It doesn't make any difference in real life. If your primary concern is dr, you should again forget about digital.

>horrendous user interface
Just no.

>poor high sensitivity performance
Indeed. Then again, all non-canon (lolnotd300) dslrs suffer from this. If your primary concern is asa64000, get a D3 or a canon.

>can't rent lenses locally
I'm currently renting a 150/f2.

>limited (new) lens catalog
Indeed, but the existing lineup is of unusually high quality.
