hey /p/. i'm looking for a decent secondary dslr and i've got $300'ish. i knowww a thread like this was around a week ago but i'd really appreciate any recommendations.

pic related, craigslist found me a canon d30 for $350... does it suck as much as i think it does?

we have too many of these Goddamn threads as is.

do your own research.

You can get a Rebel XT for $30 more new.

not op here but I'm in the same position. how long until i can get a D40 for under $300? Or else I was thinking a canon S5 IS.

when they release a cheaper, better version of it.

2 years? i don't actually know, no one does. in terms of depreciation, though, that Canon S5 IS will be a much bigger waste of money.

See, the problem with a D40/Rebel XT versus D30 or S5IS is that, camera-wise, the entry-level DSLRs aren't too good. One control dial, bad viewfinders, mediocre ergonomics, almost no autofocusing primes for the D40, etc. OTOH, a Rebel XT or D40 will deliver better image quality than an S5IS (especially in low light) and probably a D30, too.

So there's the tradeoff for people like the OP: nice cameras or mediocre cameras with better image quality. Don't you just love the people at Canon and Nikon who make decisions on what control set and other features are appropriate to an entry-level camera?

oh, and if you want a secondary slr for 300 bucks, get a film body.

Misread the OP's post; I missed the "secondary" part, which brings a different perspective to the issue.

Not "people like the OP" but "people with not much money to spend on the camera."

What is your primary camera body?

Then why buy a Canon?

why not. i'd like to see more photographers who aren't afflicted with such gross product loyalty

It's not loyalty. If you want to have one of each, that's fine.

But most photographers that own multiple bodies have the same company so that they can use their lenses/flashes/etc on whichever.

It's not product loyalty. It's lenses. Why buy a body with a different mount when you already have multiple thousands of dollars invested in lenses with a different type of mount?
