Nah, the D60 isn't worth the extra money. The D40 is fine for a beginner SLR. Hell, I still use mine.

spoken like a true D40 owner

only D40 faggots speak highly of that piece of shit

The d40 is NOT fine as a beginer's DSLR. It's image processor is equivilent to that of a flashlight's. The CCD image sensor might as well BE a flashlight. As well, it only with with AF-S lenses, which is not a good limitation for someone on a budget, as you will be hard pressed to find affordable glass. If anything, find a Canon Rebel xTi, or 750D if you're outside the states. Nikon's lower line is just short of being point and shoots. I'm a long time employee of Ritz camera and a studio professional in the Chicago area. If you can afford a D80+ I would say Nikon is a decent choice, but as a beginer I would not recommend them, especially not the D40. You may also consider staying with a film DSLR until you save up enough money to buy a camera that does not require your hand to be the size of a child's, as well, you'll have an opportunity to know if you really want to spend the money on a real camera.

Actually, it's known for having surprisingly nice image quality, regardless of it's other shortcomings.

yeah what elfman said you fucking ignorant mongrel

if you can afford a D60 get that, but you are getting close to a D80 then. Get a D40 and take some pics.

>hard pressed to find affordable glass
kit lens and 70-300mm will be all OP will need. how is this SO fucking hard for /p/ricks to understand?
>> sunshine
D60 isn't worth it if you're going to get a D40, I'll tell you that right now.
If you're thinking of buying anything more than the kit lens, don't fucking get it- save up for the D80, or buy a used D50/D70/D70s.
OR go into Canon.

get used stuff as a beginner

i like how Nikon people, i won't say Nikonfags because i'm nice, can justify suggesting a used, discontinued camera from 2005 or a much more expensive model to people without batting an eye and think it's totally cool and normal

Maybe because we don't care about Nikon's entire lineup when we only own 1-2 bodies that aren't on the consumer side.

i know, i am a nikonian and agree with you 100%

>>303322
haha don't try to pretend you've got something you haven't... what next? you're 10"??

Unless you're going to get really into it with lenses D40 is fine, better than the D60 in most cases.

The D40/60 can't autofocus non AF-S lenses, but whats worse is it can't even meter on a lot of lenses, manual focus isn't so bad but from what I hear the viewfinder is so shitty on the D40 it's not worth it(I have no issue manual focusing my D80 just as good if not better than autofocus will, but I'm not lightning fast at it)
>> Anonymous
>>303336

that's because the D80 has one of the best APS-C viewfinders out there bar none. it's the same size and brightness as the D300, except it's 95% coverage

anything else is a fucking joke. you can compose with it but they're not made to be used to focus manually

>>303337
Not that I've really ever handled a DSLR before my D80, but honestly I am underwhelmed by the viewfinder, it seems a little blurry(not much) and discolored, but knowing that its one of the better(best?) I'm sure the D40/60's are shit.

>>303357
>it seems a little blurry(not much)
set the dioptre correction

>and discolored
that must be your eyes that are fucked because it doesn't affect the colours at all

My dioptre correction is set right, when I looked through the VF it definitely seems yellower than real life.

>My dioptre correction is set right
then it's not blurry

>definitely seems yellower than real life
then you have yellow crap on your lens/viewfinder OR you are making it up/have something wrong with you

D40 is a perfectly acceptable camera. If you like it, get it. I'd reccomend a D80 or a canon entry-level instead, as D40 has no focusing motor. I'm just that kind of guy tho. Get whatever you want

Doubt there's anything on my lens, shit is brand new.

I know someone who is selling their D70 for a nice price and I've considered getting my own DSLR (as opposed to using my father's Company D3).

I've used a D70 and I like the feel, but I hear there's a decent gap between the D70 and the D80. What does anon suggest?
