Can I use this lens with extension tubes with no lockable aperture ring?

Cheers - I'd actually be wanting F1.8 - I'm looking at some pretty cheap nasty extension tubes, but it's for a narrow, specific range of pictures I want to shoot.

Then it might work out fine for you. I'm talking about some seriously narrow DOF... but I hope you dont spend too much on those tubes and that you get the effect you're looking for.

set the aperture to what you want while it is attached to the camera and then remove the lens.

You mean like using the DOF preview button to force the aperture blades to close a bit and unattach the lens with the button pressed down?

If you didn't buy it yet....don't buy it.

the focus is very fuzzy around the edges and the optics aren't sharp at all. Look at the lens right above it the f1.4 for just a couple hundred more bucks you get a noticeably better image quality....its worth it.

I dont agree. I recently bought this lens and if you are very careful with it you can get pretty sharp shots even at wide open. Would only notice softness if you pixel peep. I have had to train myself out of the focus-recompose nonsesnse tho as with this lens it moves the plane of focus too far.

Get 50/1.4 L , just save up more.
1.8 is just cheap plastic.
But if you want some serious macro, get some M42 lenses + extension tubes.

I have one, and while it had to be replaced under warrenty, it's worth the money UNLESS you plan on getting a better high-aperture lens anyway. Sure, it's got its share of flaws, but considering you're paying under $100 for it and can get some pretty shallow DOF / fast shutter speeds, I'd say it's the best bang for your buck.
