Hey /p/.

Help me out. They are both under $400 on ebay. I think I would prefer a lighter camera, but is there a really good reason to go for the D100 as my first DSLR?

6 year-old semipro D100 --OR-- 2 year-old amateur D40?

the d40, easily. The d100 is a dino.

but seriously, the d40 is the better camera. If you're looking for somewhere between amateur and pro, at least get a d200.

WAT? PHOTOGRAPHY? AS LONG AS WE'RE MAKING SHIT UP WHY NOT GO HOG WI Eeeecchhgggnn...

D100 for wider lens compatibility. D40 can't use older lenses that don't have auto focus and digital aperture control.

Not true? It can still use those lenses, they just won't auto aperture or auto focus. Though I would agree a D100 to be the better choice.

If you go for the D40, at least get the D40x with the moar megapixels and the larger sensor.

WTF? The D40X has a sensor with the same size as the D40 (or any Nikon DSLR except D3 and D700).In fact, the D40X has smaller pixels crammed into the same area, so it's more prone to noise.

OP, Go for the D100! Meter with old lenses, it's cool.

d50 or d70 is your best nikon option

basically the same as a d100 but not as old and built with more matured technology
