First well cover basic masking used for vignette or selective darkening of parts of an image. The first layer in the example image is a simple light vignette layer. To do this you first create a new layer and then paint it black. To make it easier to target with the gradient tool, change the new black layers opacity down to 50% or so. With black selected as your main color (as shown), click the gradient tool, marked 1. Next you need to choose the gradient type. Click on the area labeled 2. Then select black to transparent, labeled 3.
