Canon AE1 Anonymous
Does anyone else have this camera? I googled up some shit on it, and just found it's history. but i want to know users first hand experience with it.

I've had two, not really a fan. They do seem to be a classic darling in many's hearts, though.

What didn't you like about it? For me it's how uncomfortable it is to hold.

the metering and viewfinder, mostly.
I actually really like the handling of the A-1 (sister body) with the "action grip" on it.

My thought is, if you're gonna go old-school, go really old-school and don't get a camera with autoexposure.

However, I'm a pretentious twat.

I'm just a self-loathing asshole, maybe we should get together.

Getting an old-school camera with an autoexposure is fine as long as it's got a well-thought out manual mode. The AE-1s are just very annoying to use manually and your camera is supposed to get out of your way, not annoy you.

It's not horrible, and it's great if it's free :P
Stick a 35mm lens f/2 on it and use it as a carry-everywhere camera that's easy enough to hand to family for snaps.

I've used my dad's AE-1 Program a little, my first try at film photography, and it seems to work well.

I like the, for lack of a better word, "solid" feel of it compared to the "plastic-ness" of my digital camera.

Yeah it's a very sturdy camera, feels almost indestructible.

The AE-1 was a decent camera, but as stated, a little limited. For anyone else considering one of these though, I'd suggest a small step up to the A-1 (a camera I used to own). It has switchable multiple program modes, both shutter priority and aperture priority. it can also be switched down to manual. The only thing to watch with both of these models is your shutter speed. I found that I needed to get it re-set around once per year as I did a lot of sports photography with high shutter speeds and the A-1 tended to lose a little at the top end after a while. If you're not going to use speeds around 1/1000 sec though, you can probably leave it 2 years between maintenance.

Well i feel like an idiot but how do i take the lens off? OP btw.

if it's an FD-n lens, it's bayonet, there's a little button on the lens itself, push and turn counter-clockwise.
if it's an older FD lens, it's breechlock, just turn the ring on the lens near the mount, behind the aperture ring. Be careful, good luck.

Thanks des been a real help. Heres one more picture of the AE-1 with the lens off.

np, there's actually a lot of great stuff in FD. Not to mention Tamron's adaptall mount (the FD adaptall is cheaps, the EOS adaptall is rare and not-so-cheaps)
iirc, you can also use M42 glass and still have infinity focus, which you can't with the nikons.

i own one actually. it still took great b&w photos and was easy to learn with.

I got an AE-1P from my grandfather and quickly found the program mode to be lacking. I couldn't get behind the meter, either, after being used to my K1000's match needle. You could really tell Canon only wanted/expected the camera to be used in program mode.

I started out with the AV-1, left it for my younger brother to use, then moved to the AE-1, which I purchased from ebay. Unfortunately, the AE-1 I received was in pretty bad shape. The battery cover was broken off, the "squeek" is steadily growing worse, and there's a big gash on the left side of the camera.

Knowing that the "squeek" only means that I will either have to spend more money to get it fixed, or end up with a broken camera, I went ahead and bought the Canon F-1.

I have an AE-1 myself too. My father gave it to me when I got into photography and he had very little use for it.

I've been very satisfied when taking both colour and b&w photos, and I take it with me whenever I wanna go oldschool. The FD mount is a bit tricky when you're used to the EOS mount, but it's not a real problem in any way.
