Alright /p/eople, I come requesting your help. I'm going to be shooting some portraits with the dominant color being white. (It's a lame assignment) Now, I want the figure to be as white as possible, as well as the props used. I'm going to white out the model as much as possible, but what I'm wondering what I can do to make is super white.

Should I meter off a grey card? Should I use extremely bright lights?

There will be some color in the photos, as well as lots of texture. I'm going to be most likely shooting 160 speed.

Picture unrelated, but have some last year New Year.

Depends on what you want. "Lots of white" is pretty vague. Do you want something like this, where almost everything is white and the details are black, or in your case color:

Or something like this, where there's alot of white white:

Or something like this, where there just happens to be a lot of white in the scene, but the photograph itself isn't really all that white:

Or something else entirely? Post something like your desired result.

Learning the Zone System or another tone-based way of working would probably help you, though.

Make sure your model isn't holding malt liquor, fried chicken, or watermelon.

I think the term he's looking for is "high key"

Difficult to say but yeah metering off something that is white often produces greys rather than brilliant whites. Meter of somethine else or just under-expose slightly.

You mean overexpose? You're right, the meter will make pure white into gray, which is underexposed, so he would need to compensate by overexposing.

I haven't been able to find anything close to what I want to achieve, so I'll do my best to describe it. I want the whites to be white as possible, with very soft, subtle shadows. The main focus of the portraits is going to be texture, so I do want there to be detail, but I want the whites in the photos as white as possible.

The closest explain I could find was Grace Kelly in this photo, specifically her face.

I do plan on putting in some color, so the photos won't be completely devoid of color.

Oh, and I'm a she, just for future references.

Hey, speak for yourself. I'm desperate enough that I care that this random anonymous person claims she's female.

I think lighting is the key here, although camera settings are important, light is probably even more important in this case.

But i'm just an amateur photographer.

In the thumb, I almost though the guy on the right was Clint Eastwood.

It's the Asian version, Crinto Eastwoodo.

Now, what are you suggesting by lighting? Should I just blast the model with as much light as I can?
