Good job taking in an off camera flash, However use the flash for FILL, and let a bit of the natural lighting burn in. F5.6 is ok, but leave the shutter open for like 1/4 of a second or something, then the flash will stop the subject and the natural lighting will fill in the rest. Also ya tone down the flash a bit if you are going to use that strategy.
Also you don't need (or even want) ISO 1600. if you are using a flash. shoot at like ISO 400. The flash has a lower limit, in that by the time the TTL metering activates the flash will have put out too much light and you have overexposed your pic anyway.
Try firing a flash in a small room at f1.8 and ISO 1600, No matter what the TTL settings are it will overexpose. You may have done this by setting your cam to ISO 1600.
