Up until now i've just been getting along with my trusty point 'n' shoot, however, its time for me to get some better equipment otherwise all my shot will keep looking like they were taken by a 16 year old girl.

The camera i'm looking at at the moment is the Canon S5 IS (left). It seems pretty well equipped with 8mp, 12x optical,, DIGIC III, face recog, and a hotshoe.

Anything else I should consider? I'm looking for something that would ideally let me develop my camera skills, not just an overpowered point 'n' shoot. I'm okay with 2nd hand stuff off ebay too, if there's some older models that would be worth looking at.

You want to improve your photography skills?

You don't need 8mp, 12x optical, DIGIC III or face recog for starters. Sure a superzoom like the s5 has a manual focusing ring but the manual apeture/shutter controlls are still not very accessable. So you want to improve? Get a cheaper dslr and a prime and go nuts.

Used Canon Digital Rebel or Rebel XT. Even the 20D is pretty reasonably priced used right now.

Used Nikon D50 if you're into Nikons, which I'm personally not.

K110D or even the later istDs are cheap as chips and probably a better idea than the olympus dslrs
