I visited the zoo today.

Some of my zoomed shots appear a bit grey and "hazy." The zoom lens is particularly cheap. Is this hazy effect a product of the lens or the lighting?

This is another example of an image that appears hazy. Any ideas on what might cause this?

Both hazy shots you were shooting into the light, (aka towards the sun) So what could be happening is that your front element of the lens gets lit up by the sun and causes everything to be hazy, Or it is confusing your meter and your camera is overexposing.

D70s isn't the most accurate camera for metering unfortunately (My D50 is more spot on) Edit the pictures in photoshop and tweak the levels and you could probably eliminate the "haze"

there was a lot of drama with the D100 and some with the D70 about their contrast.
If you use ACR, it shouldn't be too big a problem to have a standard curve that you like to use. If you use nikon capture, toneup or always shoot in jpeg you can use custom curves. Either in capture/toneup after the fact with RAW or in-camera with jpeg.
If you do it in-camera, you can only have use one custom curve at a time. There's a bunch of them already made or you can make one that works for you. Google around for "nikon D70 custom curve"
