Live View question on dSLR Anonymous
First of all, I know how Live View on dSLR is shit sucks so please post live view fail/shit sucks/gb2point-and-shoot and feel good about yourself and get it out of your system.

Now, my question. From what I understand, there's passive (tripod mode) and active (handheld mode) Live View.

Passive (tripod) = when you get viewfinder/LCD blackout and there's a mirror flip. It uses phase detection so it's 'nearly' as fast as conventional AF.

Active (handheld) = when there is no mirror flip, completely silent operation, slower and uses contrast detection like point-and-shoots

If that is all accurate, correct me if I'm wrong, let's move on.

I read a couple reviews saying the Sony A350 has a better Live View AF system and I keep reading the DPR review on it but since I don't know all the technical terms, can't understand how it makes it better.

dumbed down version:
The mirror in the mirror box doesn't move during live view. a smaller mirror near the view finder redirects the image to basically a tiny camcorder. The big mirror does not move, which is why normal AF works and the mirror doesn't have to move.

Ah, so you get the faster phase detection autofocus and no blackout?

Not 100% sure, but i'm pretty sure you get the faster "real" AF (just like using the view finder) and no black out.

Phase detection is the term for the "real" AF. :)
