Would getting a new nikon d40 be a waste of money. I do take alot of shots, car shows, races and nature stuff. Im wanting to upgrade just wondering if the 600 bucks is worth it. Plus what ever fast action lens i would need. Thanks for any help.

The d40 is about as cheap as it gets for a dslr, it's plenty worth it. But you need to do the comparisons and decide if it or something similar such as a d80 or Canon Rebel XTi might be preferable, although again, you can't beat the price.

If OP picture is something you're proud of, then don't buy an dSLR and learn photography with what you have now and switch later.

the d40 limits your choices on lenses, the only ones that have AF with it have motors in the lenses - hence more expensive for lenses

Just keep in mind that the D40 is AF only lenses. Check out what kind of lenses you are planning to get and if they all fit into AF or you have the budget then sure if you like go with the D40.

Maybe you could try for a second hand D50. And thus be open to more lenses.
