I'm starting to suspect that macros and closeups are disrespecting in the photographical world. they seem so easy to do with at least some measure of mediocrity and are very pleasing much more often than my other photos.

so is it true? are macros to photography what mcdonald's is to food?

It's like with pictures of sunsets. They have to be a serious step above, cause there's so much well-shot stuff out there. Especially if it's plants and flowers. Otherwise it just depends on the subject. It comes down to the purpose of the photo.
>> slim !yE5LOsLjxQ
>>52960
so then this is like one of the most boring threads ever with those 3 pics?
>> elf_man
Actually 52957 is good, while the other two are mediocre. But nothing actually makes it stand out besides "here's a pretty flower." You said the same thing, effectively, on my last thread, so you know where I'm coming from. But if you like these pictures, keep working on it, and try for something really creative.
Nevermind the current trend of slim-bashing, we know you're new and working on it, and want honest critique. Shit, I'm brand new to the technical side of photography, and these are just my opinions, so take it or leave it. 'Nuff said about that.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>52954

Yup, is true. but fact of the matter is most (almost all) photographers love to do the flower and plant macros anyway, so it's just something that needs to be done differently than what everyone else has done

lol thanks dude. i have been taking a beating here lately. but it's not like i didnt deserve it for running my mouth when i can't prove i can do better. talk is cheap i guess. makes you wonder how critics get paid so well.

also, these just HAPPEN to be nature macros. i know that the SUBJECT is mcdonaldsy, but i mean the technique itself. does the macro setting automatically demand higher requirements of quality because it's gimmicky?
>>52967
yeah there really is something addictive about sucking up all the detail on a pretty, small thing.

I really like this one, by th eway. Lovely textures, shapes, and color. It almost looks edible.

To me, macro photography is how I relax and fuck around. Street photography, documentary work, event photography, fashion photography, it's all very stressful and ends up feeling like work (albeit very fun work!) sometimes. I unwind by just going to the park, relaxing in the beautiful outdoors, and taking aesthetically pleasing pictures of flowers and bugs and crap. So, to me it's aesthetically pleasing, but devoid of any meaning.

A macro tells a very boring story. Any shot with a person will tell a vastly more interesting story, perhaps even several stories. That's what makes street photography and some portraits so great, that they have that capacity for storytelling with just a single image.

But yeah, even though I don't really respect my macro work, I still enjoy taking them. Pic related.
>> elf_man
Yeah, that's true. Try not to sound like a know it all, it doesn't help.
I think it's true for other macro subjects too, just flowers moreso than most. Either way it's easy to create pretty decoration, it takes some real effort to make it more.

i have no idea what i am looking at, but it is incredibly fun TO look at. this is why i like macros i guess. i can see myself focusing on them very heavily in the future.

also f'n saved

Heh, thanks. It's a glass bead christmas ornament in front of a paper lantern made from various layers of cut paper. I saw the light bending through the beads, and knew there was a picture there. :)

It's at a wonderful toy store in Austin called Toy Joy. It's a delightful place. Very surreal.

I love my macros but it is as you say easy to take them.

Can't stop taking macros for some reason. Don't think I ever will. It's just awesome to fuck around with macros.

Nothing wrong with macro. It's just a different type of art compared to, say, street photography.
