Okay /p/, a query for you.

Attached is an image. There are four cameras displayed in it.

You have just won a competition, and will be given one of these cameras for free.

You will have to use that camera as your *only* camera for the next few months (you will recieve this camera immediately), and you will also be judged on the pictures you take with this camera.

You are allowed to edit your pictures after you have taken them.

Which of these cameras would you choose?

all point and shoot cameras are the same to me except in terms of digital zoom.

resolution is completely meaningless so I'd go for the one that has the best focus under zoom.

also, good work this thread as not being another "what camera should I buy" thread

G9. I'm used to the Canon interface and I like swivel screens. Also, it appears to be the only one with a hot shoe. Also, it's the smallest.

Canon G9, now you have an awesome compact camera. With your saved money, you can now go buy an SLR.

there's no swivel screen on the g9...
>> ac !!VPzQAxYPAMA

Huh. You're right. I assumed there was since they had swivel screens on the G1 through G6.

I'd still go with the G9, though, for the size and hotshoe advantages.

G9. Nice features, nice looks. Canon's G series is known for its nice image quality, too.

I hate cameras of that kind, they're neither compact nor they take really good pictures. I'll take my minolta x60 plzkthx.

Of all those, Canon wins for best sensor, but fails for 35mm wide end of the lens. I like wide-angle, but I hate 1/2.5 sensors. Tough question.

I think they have wide-angle adapters for the G9

...for the price of a SLR lens.

None, gimmie my old n80 back.

Back? Are you missing it?
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j

No, I've still got it, but according to the competition I have to use one of those cameras. So I'm saying give me my old N80 back!
>> elf_man !fBgo7jDjms

Ah. I was thinking too literally.

>>77072
Hm, I'd probably go for the G9 as a nice portable upgrade to my a530. Don't need a fake dslr.

G9. easy.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA
G9. Very cool pocketable camera. Fastish lens. Nice control dials. Hotshoe. Pop a Pocket Wizard on that fucker and go to town.
>> Anonymous
Just get a real camera, noob.
>> heavyweather !4AIf7oXcbA

He gave us four choices. Your suggestion isn't one of them.

Also, in the form-factor of the G9, there is no "real camera", unless you're talking about a Leica or Epson RD-1.

I'm going to semi-dissent and say that the Panasonic is an equally good choice to the G9, just for different things.

I've got both an earlier Panasonic superzoom and an earlier Canon G. Both are great. The Panasonic lens is definitely better- I didn't believe it was actually designed by someone at Leica until I saw it- but the G has a hotshoe. The Panasonic handles better; the G has faster RAW shot to time. (This could be because the G I have has three less megapixels than the Panasonic, or it could be something genuine.) Manual focusing is easier on the Panasonic; one has to use the screen in the back to do it on the G because it doesn't have an EVF.

I suggest that the OP do what we suggest for people to do when they're buying SLRs: just go and hold the camera in his hands, and see which one works the best. Unless, of course, he's big on using some feature that one of them does or doesn't have: a huge zoom range or an external flash or whatever.

G9, but not because its 12MP
Largest Sensor Size,
Canon usually has quality P&S's, and they have the best wide aperture performance when zoomed.
>> Anonymous
panasonic. girlfriend has an fz8, and the lens is totally lustworthy.

crappy highlights, though.

then again, david hobby (strobist) thinks the G9 is totally badass. his opinion is worth trusting.
>> notaphotograph
I would go for the canon, because I m kinda a canonfag about point and shoot/ superzoom.
even if I own a fuji.
btw this fuji 8000fd seems to suck, way more expensive than the 6500fd for 2mp difference and 18x zoom but a 1/2.35 sensor...?!
6mp with 1/1.7 sensor is better I think.
anyway go for the canon.

Canon G9

Cameras are for pictures not for having a zoom bigger than everybody else.
