Hey, /p/. I suddenly have this urge to buy a nice vintage rangefinder camera. I was looking at some beautiful Nikons on eBay, but they range from expensive to REALLY FUCKING expensive. So I'm asking you: Which good and relatively cheap rangefinder camera should I buy and what can I expect from it?

Picture very related.

Leica M8 is a good start, they tend to go for pretty cheap

I'm a big fan of the Canon Canonet QL17 GIII. You're stuck with one lens, but its 40mm f/1.7 is nothing to sneeze at. It's very compact, and it just feels *right* using it.

Cost me about $50 for the camera, as I recall, and then another $10 for the light seal kit to repair it (these cameras almost always have gummy, decomposing light seals that you'll need to replace if you don't want leaks. It's a fairly easy home repair, though)

Check out a Voigtlander Bessa rangefinder, they're the least expensive life support system for Leica M mount lenses (also known as THE SEX). Get yourself a (comparitively) cheap Summicron to go with it, and that'll be one fine kit.

ONCE YOU POP THE FUN DON'T STOP!

I agree with this person. Bessa's are some of the best entry level rf's you can get. They are also newer and less prone to all the crap that happens with these older cameras. I started off with a Bessa R. Then moved on to an L with a CV 15mm lens, which is fucking awesome and full of sex and I also have a Leica M6 with 40mm cron.

I wouldn't mind a Bessa R2A in Battleship Grey either. Or one of the new R4M's for some of that wide angle goodness. Check out the rf forum for more ideas and possible cheap deals. http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/

Any thoughts on Yashica Electro 35? Very nice looking and dirt cheap.

Fun camera but it doesn't have shutter speed selection. It's basically always in Av mode. If you can live with that then it's a nice camera. I have one but haven't had the chance to run some film through it.
