Insta-art.
Also, two words: bounce flash.

lol, and bounce it off the moutherfuckin sky

Many people at a wedding wear white shirts.

Instant outdoor reflectors for bouncing the flash.
>> Anonymous
>>271094
oh wow. keep going.

do you see that everyone has their jackets on? it's because they're outside. the one place where bounce flashes are ineffective.
>> beethy !vW/UaE6zYU
You captured a cute moment... the but composition and framing are terrible... the photo is incredibly cluttered.
It's no good, this is something auntie Bertha could've taken with her 50 dollar point and shoot.
Practice more with your SLR... and I fucking hope you weren't the only 'photographer' they had.
If you ever decide to take your camera along to an event where it's dark as shit and you're not sure if you can bounce it anywhere... then either buy a diffuser or use a DIY bounce card.

Lady to the left has a dress that light can bounce off of...

... and besides a piece of paper would work just as well as a person in a white shirt.
>> Anonymous
Not as bad as I thought. My first accessory purchase is going to be the SB-600 flash. As for it being cluttered, not much I could have done different that I can see except wait for everyone to leave.

And I wasn't the only photographer, although the one they had used a D80, which isn't as professional as I was expecting. I was just a newfag with a D40.

thanks /p/
>> fence !!POey2hdozCZ
ah, beethy and his old standby "i hope you weren't the only photographer.."

classic.

people are easily impressed by wedding photographers. as long as you can see the faces, most people are happy. it's not like they're going to sit there and nitpick the composition. i mean, jesus christ. my parents didn't really notice how bad their wedding photography was until i pointed it out when i was 16.

i'm not saying that's an excuse for sloppy work, but photographers always act like a wedding is the most austere, important event in photography. it's not. most couples are just as impressed with the photos their mommies took with a point and shoot, or the photos from disposables piled on every table.
>> beethy !vW/UaE6zYU
>>271130
you're so fucking wrong i almost think you're trolling
i know you're still a bit butthurt after my post on your wedding shot.

>I fucking hope you weren't the only 'photographer' they had.

OP saying he took his camera to a wedding =/= photographer on assignment. you best be trolling

I hate the INSTA ART effect you've done on this. It would be better without it.

I'll go both ways on this brewing shitstorm. If you're not the main photographer then you are free to dick around all you want, which is great fun for a photographer, but if you are the only one there then it is your job to get things done and no excuses will change that. I've heard of people being asked to move to get the lighting right. Heck, even so someone could use them as a sneaky candidate to bounce off of. There's always a solution and you shouldn't be afraid to order people around if you are there as the photographer. Just be friendly and polite.

I'll also add that the level of "artiness" (and overall quality of the photographs as they would be judged by a fellow photographer) desired varies greatly with the clientèle. At the lower end of the scale people tend not to want or care about art, they want a simple record of the events done by someone who isn't going to get drunk or mess up and has some decent gear to do it with. Get the faces there with all the appropriate groups and record what is happened in a competent fashion and they will be happy. Guaranteed. Most of them aren't fine art critics or interested in photography as an art form anyway. That's how it goes in the lowest end of students and such.

When you get higher end customers wanting more from you then they pay accordingly and make their wishes clear beforehand when you arrange things. They'll also not just pick some amateur that will do it cheap, but go for more established professionals. They'll never risk it on an unknown. It's why the professionals aren't worried about a student with their D40 or Rebel taking all their business away. The kind of customers tempted by the bottom feeders wouldn't be able to afford them anyway or would have just got a relative to do it for free.

Let's see the color image

What, You used the greyscale setting on your camera?
Not smart. Always shoot color, you can convert later.
The camera floating out of the door is kinda cool. A bit underexposed, again if it were a color image it probably wouldn't be, even if converted.

There are 3 people here that I read with great amusement:

Butterfly - a elitist, know-nothing that must be a big fish in a really small pond
AC - blithering idiot, but at least harmless
Beethy - a guy who probably spend most of his life looking for the corners in a round room.
These three combined take up more bandwidth and are responsible for more misinformation than everyone else combined

You'd notice i dont talk much about photography itself because it's not an area I have much experience in. Only in subjects outside of this area I'll be particually vocal because I'm right.

That and blatently obvious sony based trolling I do hope no one takes seriously.

that was great

You can achieve proper exposure with full force frontal flash as well, so pay attention to these jerks saying "bounce it off the purse of the old lady lol idk" . Proper lightning is proper exposure, and proper exposure is a wide distribution of levels in the histogram without cutoffs in either end. It more engineering than artfaggotry. Also, bouncing a flash in a tiny space can result in very creepy looking shadows.
