As you may know, dealextreme is selling IR filters for a bit over $20. I got mine a few days ago, but today was the first somewhat sunny day so I could test it.

Turns out I needed the 15 second exposure unless I pointed the camera directly at the sun. Handheld is doable in bright sunlight, especially if you can boost the ISO and/or get a bigger aperture and have IS.

Forgot my tripod, and I couldn't see shit on the LCD or through the viewfinder so please don't bother to critique the subject or composition.

seconded -- just take a photo of a white sheet of paper and use that. It really really helps make the photos look surreal instead of just stained.

can someone explain the point of infra-red photography to me? other than perhaps using multiple exposure to capture more detail, i dont understand why you'd want images with dodgy colours.

Lol wut? You've got a simple, non-TTL viewfinder. A filter shouldn't affect it.

Why do painters paint in weird colors sometimes?

Most photographers use it as a gimmick, but some people use it well. (Compare ultrawides, how the average dumbass uses the weirdness to make their pictures stand out, and how Jim Nachtwey uses them. Or Holgas, the typical shit there, and Dave Burnett.)

Don't give advice if you don't know shit. You need to custom white balance on green grass.
