My D40 strap is damn uncomfortable, are the pro camera straps better? My dad swears by those old hippy ones with the woven designs and shit, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to put one on my camera.

unless you're wearing a suit, hippie camera straps actually look less gay than the brand-name "NIKON NIKON D700 ZOMFG NIKON NIKON" ones.
>> Lynx !!KY+lVSl0s2m
keep in mind I'm a complete brand whore. I was offered the wind colored nikon for 15$ a few weeks ago, dunno why I let it go.

I swear by thin straps, like the ones you see on rangefinders or bridge cameras. Big, thick straps like those that come with pro and semipro SLRs (don't know about entry-level ones) just feel weird to me.

For starters, thin ones are much to wrap around your wrist.

i hate shoulder/neck straps. i use this

personally i find the wider the better.
just makes sense; more area to spread the load across... thats prob why they make em that wide...

I don't use straps.
I have a tight grip, that by now could even crush Chuck Norris' balls... almost.

I use a thin strap that was bundled with a Canon G9 to carry my film Nikon FG. But it's good only for light cameras - my xboxhueg DSLR feels uncomfortable even with its own 1.5" wide strap.

I'm using my Canon A-1's strap on my Nikon D80. It's longer and I prefer shoulder straps over neck straps. Neck straps make me feel like a tourist and shoulder straps make me feel more pro.

All of the OEM straps are crap, spend 15bux and get a seude or leather padded one from tamrac.
I mean, if you want your bloodflow to be cut off while advertising "Mug This Asshole!" in bright lettering, go right ahead

Although I usually just use the plain nikon strap, as having the camera hanging gives me a chance to rest my wrists.. This handstrap is wonderful, would reccomend it to anyone who wants an alternative to the conventional neckstrap.

A good strap can make all the difference when you use a camera for a long time. Those old hippy ones were great. Very comfy.

Get a wide and padded strap if you can. The wider it is, the more it spreads the weight out and so it "feels" lighter, rather than cutting into you. Stops the weight of the camera gear getting to you over a long time and causing aches too. OP/TECH sell a range of them in a modular system that seems to be popular.

I really want one of these as the torque over my hand when using a large flash hurts after 3-4 hrs use.

I like the sony strap for not mentioning the model number on it.

Only the higher Nikons (D*00 and above) have the model on the strap. A friend of mine who does photojourn enjoys using his old strap from his old film days and gave me his Nikon D3 strap which I use on my D80. I'm a brandwhore :p.

I use a wrist strap, and I simply wrap the neck cord around my forearm (to keep it from dangling, and snagging). Works pretty well for me.

Alternatively, I use one of those Opitech neck straps that are made from neoprene. It's pretty comfortable too.

weight distribution has a lot to do with how you hold your camera. ive started it have it over my neck and under my right arm like a sling bag kinda thing. its much more comfortable and ive gotten over the fact that i might look like a fag.

Has anybody had any experience with leather camera straps versus woven ones? I love the smell and feel of leather, but is it good for a strap?

ive used a strap with a leather or leather like piece on it. if its hot where you are then i wouldnt suggest it, its quite gross when sweaty.

i use a padded tamrac strap most of the time. they're awesome.

if the supplied strap is a neck strap, what the hell is a shoulder strap?

I just threw away an entire box of those things that my father in law dumped on me. They may be comfortable but they're just too damn cumbersom. Not to mention gawdy as hell.

the hippy ones aren't so bad, and i think they help bring you less attention since they don't have words on them. ugly or not, it's much more comfortable using it than one that says NIKON or whatever all over it. obviously this sort of thing doesn't bother everyone

My D1X strap is really uncomfortable, so yes, carry on /p/.

People who care about the fashion aspect of a "hippy strap" are fucking retarded, they are comfortable and functional.

This does not look faggy, if you swing it around so it's on your back it's comfy as shit and it also looks really cool.
Like, if Indiana Jones had a Nikon, that's how he'd carry it.

what's the difference from a neck strap, you can wrap a neck strap around your shoulder too

Am I the only one it bothered that in the last scene of the newest Indiana Jones movie, the camera was a shitty box camera? Now it wasn't Indy shooting it, but he should've owned an M3 or at least a Rolleiflex to give to Mutt to shoot especially *that* with.
