ow wow, it worked...
So my question is, how can there be two points of focus?
Is it two pictures edited together? Or do they shoot at high aperature and then add some blur?

Anyone?

okay, there are tricks with video that you can't do the same way in film (the way light will make an edge sharp even if the object itself is out of focus, which they did to great effect in 6 Feet Under).

there are multiple-focus split lenses which you can see a great example of in Wicker Park's intro when the guy is shopping the diamond ring.

Heroes does this stuff, though, where the camera doesn't seem to have any idea *where* it's focused, and it drives me crazy. mostly because they keep the DoF really tight and people miss their marks by a centimeter.

I started this thinking that one of those would answer it, but now that I look at the picture really closely, I can't think of an acceptable solution for why his cheek is in focus and the rest of his face isn't, unless it was simply exploiting video. that's not helpful, I know, but maybe someone more familiar with it will correct me.

do you have any resources on those lenses? I remember reading about them about 5 years ago, where the whole image would be unsharp by default, and the computer could somehow make it back in focus again?

Anyone else got thoughts about weir multiple focus shots?

it's a split-focus filter. look how quickly his face falls out of focus compared to the rest of the scene. they also used the edge of his face to disguise the edge of the filter.

small discussion here:

You can buy filters to archive that sort of effect. Useful in the pre-Photoshop era.

like these?

yeah, exactly. they're basically just a magnifying glass chopped in half and thrown in a screw mount. they were big in the seventies, along with starburst, soft focus and multi-image filters.

they still use them in movies (sergio leone used them all the time, way back when), though not too often. i remember a scene in The Departed used one, and it stuck out like a sore thumb.

That's the one. I've got one of those. Not something I'd use much or at all now it's all digital but I'm loathe to be parted with any gear.

i like the yellow starburst

Nowadays the only filter that is really useful and still considered tasteful is the ND and graduated filters. A lot of it went out of fashion.

Polarizer?
Soft focus?
>> BlackAdder !!bSWRwu/NqzQ
>>98128

I wouldn't buy a Cokin polariser. I'd rather have a good quality screw on one. Soft focus isn't something I'd use much, especially now with Photoshop being so easy, but even then it reminds me too much of cheesy old porn.

I thought you just meant filters in general; "Cokin" wasn't in your post.

I've never enjoyed porn, so I don't associate soft focus with it at all... did they really use it in porn? That makes no sense. Why would someone want dreamy, wistful looking porn?

And a genuine soft focus effect can't be faked with PS. Gaussian blur just looks, well, like gaussian blur.

Ah, I see. I was thinking in the context of the Cokin system.

They used the soft focus to make the ladies look all pretty and smooth. Works for portraits and it works for porn and glamour as it hides their herpes. I can remember having a set of racy playing cards that showed off the effect to the extreme. Makes me think of 70s cheesy photos and films now.

I looked at the scene again, and it seemd to get even stranger, because the girls shoulders are both rout of focus, her head is in fucos, but the painting behind her is in focus too...

Won't a multimillion dollar show like heroes just hire some magic fairy's or something?
>> Anonymous
naah, your all wrong, they just hire a multi focus fairy!
>> Anonymous
>>98228

No, the fairies are in front of the camera, not behind it.
