Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7 Anonymous
Should I get one?

I just want a midrange camera to play around with. What does /p/ think of these and what alternatives are there in the same price range?
>> Anonymous
Don't spend more than $200 on a point and shoot.

By "Play around" I really meant to learn how to take photographs, experiment and take some nice shots with. I've played around with the camera in the store and liked it alot. I'm just a little iffy on it because it's a sony.

IS DAT SUM CARL ZEISS GLASS@!?

The Canon S3IS can be found cheaply because the S5IS is out now. Hell, all of the Powershots are good. Panasonic Lumix line is nice, too.

FUCK SONY IN THE ASS
>> Anonymous
basically witn P&shits youll get much the same with whatever one you chose...
infinite DOF
insane amount of noise
soft images
slow load/shutter/etc

buy one that feels good in your hands, has a nice user interface and options youll find on an slr(if thats where you want to head) so that the transition is easier/
personally i dont like sony either, but for p&s again, there all the same.

when you go DSLR go canon or nikon all the way!
sony just isnt up to the same standards yet...

You get Zeiss glass in camera phones and stuff now. What a waste.

Thanks dude.
I found that surprisingly helpful.

all good.
happy to help.

also check out dpreview.com if you havent. theres some forums that are p&s based, but the really good ones are the slr ones..
just ignore all the interbrand shit, cat photo and other stupid shit and people will generally help.

if you can(money wise) look at a canon 300D, theyre old and a bit slow but theyre the absolute best way to start into decent photography and a nice stepup to a decent amateur slr. get that and a kit lens and a canon 50mm 1.8 and youll learn a LOT, and very quickly too if you put too it.

Insane amount of noise and soft images? What kind of crappy P&S camera do you have...? Provided you know how to operate the camera, they are more than capable of taking great pictures. No, their images aren't on par with DSLR's (because I know you'll bring it up as a lame attempt at a comeback), but they're more than enough for most people.

Also, the cameras in this thread aren't point and shoot.

You're either on crack, or fucking retarded.

counter troll about sony because i cant be bothered to say anything useful because you're an idiot and it would be a waste.

I agree on the Panasonic, especially the LX2. It has a Leica lens and is essentially the same camera as Leica's D-Lux3 for 200 bucks less.

lol @ the Sony martyr. Keep defending that purchase because if you can convince others it is good, then maybe you didn't make a huge mistake and waste your money!

Only an idiot would waste money on Sony and the rest of the shit. No advantages, lots of disadvantages.

my minolta gear would like a word with you.
>> Anonymous
>>87877
Minolta doesn't/didn't have a monopoly on good old glass. Pentax DSLRs can work with old Pentax glass; Nikons and Fujis will take old Nikkor glass; four-thirds cameras will take awfully near anything with an adapter. (As will most DSLRs.)

It's an advantage shared by other systems, and hence not an explicit reason to go with Sony.

Sony works for you. Stop pimping it like it's some wondercamera. It's a capable high-end, sub-pro DSLR. Like all DSLRs, it has its advantages and disadvantages over its competition.

im not pimping it its a camera in a catagory with a price and certian features. However when people recklesly insult it with unfounded claims i will defend it because it is not a shit camera/system.

getting this in about two weeks.

i have a lumix lx2 i love the camera, the over active noise fixing engine is kind of a bother sometimes, the camera does not do well at any iso over 100 or 200

if you can live with these two issues i definitely recommend the lx2
