Does this look like a good 2-page spread?

In b4 the other kind of spread.

I know /p/ will hate it, but I'd suggest faking DOF and blurring out the background more.

Also your text is a problem. You should switch to black and add a semi-transparent white block behind it.

Good start though!

>>210230
I did the exact opposite of what you said: I used white text on a semi-transparent black block. Is there any difference? This is a prototype for a real 2-page magazine spread. I'm new at this.

Black text on white is significantly easier to read than white text on black. Also white text on black always appears thinner than it actually is, so just keep that in mind. You should be fine since you're using a sans-serif, but its just something to look out for.

I'd also suggest cutting down the copy a little bit (white text on black can tire the eyes) and making it left-justified instead of dual-justified, and then making the text below the header the same width as the header. The width should either be the same, or greater in difference.

>dof looks fine

DOF is fine for a photograph, but this looks like it's probably a clothing add, and right now the black tops kind of fade into the black bits of the background.

Girl on the right.
Big dark mass to her right.
Smaller dark mass to her left.
It's distracting from the clothes, and both areas will appear darker in print.

You can keep on LOLWUT-ing all you want, but I guarantee I know more about graphic design than you do.

Here's what you suggested. i don't like the black-text-on-white, which I guess looks ok for an advertisement. But this is for the first two pages of an article, and I think white-text-on-black looks better.

I would first get rid of the center justified body copy, it fails horribly.
I would also make the title bigger, enough so that it touches the model to the far right some way or another, which would add some heirarchy.

I meant a tighter box, but while fiddling with it it became apparent that there's too much going on for a transparent box.

Here's what I came up with.

That looks pretty bad actually, and not bad good. You need something not so tight and cropped, with rounded and faded edges.

I actually like OP's one the best. It's easy enough to read and as for tiring the eyes its only the opening paragraph. Presumably the rest of the article will be black text on white pages.

Maybe it's cause most people know Lorem Ipsum is a just a nonsense paragraph used to show what fonts would look like?

There's no real meaning behind it. Let it go.

lorem ipsum is standard placeholder text that's been used for thousands of years. just do a google search. it was designed to look like real words without actually being real words, so you can see how text will look on a layout without having to find copypasta

Propose that I've read Caesar's Gallic wars, parts of Ovid's Metamorphosis, and parts of the Aeneid in Latin after 5 years of Latin class and wondered what the hell this was. So please excuse idle curiosity.

In addition to the graphic design stuff, I'd go back and reprocess the raw file. The highlights are too harsh.

And in this

>>210258

I'd dodge the top-left-hand corner. In the rest where it's not covered up, I'd dodge the whole darkened-out area. Did you not have another strobe to get the illumination even?

Georgia.
The header is Bell Gothic Black, but I'm sure you could find something better. I don't have a lot of my fonts on this computer yet. I'd suggest looking at a fashion magazine to get some inspiration.

>>210268
>That looks pretty bad actually, and not bad good. You need something not so tight and cropped, with rounded and faded edges.
Rounded edges could be good (I'd suggest rounding just the bottom right corner on both boxes) but suggesting faded edges is almost invariably a bad idea. Pick up a magazine. How many faded edges do you see? None? Ok.

>>210270
>I actually like OP's one the best. It's easy enough to read and as for tiring the eyes its only the opening paragraph. Presumably the rest of the article will be black text on white pages.
Fine and well, but if the OP turns in the original for an assignment he's going to get docked points for the ambiguity between text and background in the "UM" in the title, and for the way the lower right of the text bleeds into the highlights in the water.
Also, typically one is supposed to do a title in a sans-serif and the body copy in serif, but that's not a "rule" or anything, just common practice.
Not saying mine is great, it just solves a lot of common problems.

OP, the very best way to figure out a page layout is to pick up a couple magazines you like and start stealing bits and pieces from their layouts and putting them together into a new composition. There's absolutely nothing wrong with borrowing from other sources (thought blatant rip-offs are discouraged) and most of the time you'll be praised for talking about your inspiration instead of just trying to pull something out of your ass.

OP here. She's Latina, not Asian. And that "fire" around her thigh is because she moved her leg during the 1.6 second exposure, letting the reflecting light on the pool get onto her. I guess I could photoshop it, but I think it kind of looks kind of cool.
>> Anonymous
>>210340
Thanks for the great feedback.

> the ambiguity between text and background in the "UM" in the title, and for the way the lower right of the text bleeds into the highlights in the water.

That's why I used a black gradient in the original photo. I preferred a gradient instead of an entire black block (with lowered opacity or something). But as you noticed, the "UM" is starting to blend into the background where the gradient is fading out. Your approach with the white block does solve these issues.

Best, IMO.

Fix her leg, and make your models wear belts next time.

I don't know much about graphic design, but I saw the fountain on campus pictured, so I had to try and play.

I think the justified text and letter spacing hurts your original - some of the letter spacing is very close to the spacing between words on the lines above or below due to the justification.

I also think the title text should have been slightly larger - my friend says it make that look like a subheading instead of a title.

Anyway, I added grey because I like grey.

I did use fill flash, moron. Look a the catchlights in the eyes and the dense shadows on the ground.
The 1.6 second exposure is to bring out the background and sky during dusk.
>> Anonymous
>>210538
>Exposure Time 1.6 sec
>F-Number f/4.0
At f/2.8, you get 0.6s, way easier to stand still for.

And even if you need the 1.6s exposure, you can probably find a model who isn't so coked up she can't stand still for 1.6 seconds.
That wasn't a fidget, that was like "Hey I'm just gonna switch poses in the middle of your exposure, okay thanks, luv ya!!!!!!!!"
Hell, you as the photographer should have caught this on-site and retaken it. That big black square on the back of the camera has a purpose, you know.
