If you have to use flash, put a tissue or coffee filter in front of it. This will make the shadows a little softer. You could also use a small mirror to try to bounce it off the wall behind you (if their is one). This can make more natural lighting, but in some conditions (such as when you don't cover the whole flash with the mirror) create bad effects. I'd have to agree, flash usually does not add anything good to a picture. (heres a quick comparison)
