Crappy Point-and-shoot + Photoshop Anonymous
Screwing around trying to emulate the filter look from the television show Top Gear. If you have nice PS effects, please share.

For the record (sorry no neat layers cut)-
Copy layer
circle selection, heavily feathered (80-100px)
invert selection
new Levels layer (0-50-255)-ish
flatten
new Curves layer - 2 points, make an S shape, play as you see fit, each pic is different
flatten
Image > Mode > Lab Color / channels tab
select lightness layer
Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask (50% / 50px)
Image > Mode > RGB

the vignette effect doesn't work well at all, needs higher feather

typically I'd agree. And I would have feathered more, but this is close to the effect Top Gear uses, which was my goal. I'll try to find a comparative shot.

What's kinda cool about top gear though is that they chuck filters straight on top of their cameras. Then some post processing on top

top gear use that graduated filter thing for every fucking shot. every shot has that graduation tint at the top, even when they are pointing low and close up at car headlights. lame.

it is the "top gear look". i think the photographer welded it on to the front of the lens of their outdoors gear and never took it off.
