Can you build considerable upper body muscle through pushups? I can't weightlift anymore because I was diagnosed with a varicocele.

Are pushups as effective as, say, dumbells if you want thicker arms?
What can pushups do to your body that weightlifting can't?

Thanks in advance.

pushups can generally develope your chest much better than weights. they also work your upper back, but your arms won't get as big through pushups compared to weights.

I agree with this. At best you can do some work on your triceps if you go from doing two-handed to one-handed push ups and gain strength with a regime like that, but at best you'd probably just build up your triceps a bit.

In general though, you'd probably just plateau somewhat fast with push ups on your chest/shoulders or even pull ups for your biceps/back.

Adding resistance I guess might help but working out is the only real way to build substantial amounts of muscle.

why don't you just get it fixed?

Because it's too mild.

and weightlifting will make it worse and make your doctor fix it?
you see where i'm going with this?

Push ups are really just a pecs triceps and front shoulders exercise when talking about size/strength (what muscle is more heavily involved depending on what width your hands are apart, diamond pushup=triceps, shoulder width=pecs and wider then shoulder=front shoulder)
if you want to build upper body muscle id suggest doing pull ups aswell for your back/biceps

Push ups are a great exercise. Vary your form and you'll work different muscles.

>HOWEVER
What people have said is true. As you improve and find yourself doing 30, 40, 50 push ups, you're not going to see gains in muscle size as much. When your reps are that high, you're building endurance more than you're building bigger stronger muscles.

It's still better than nothing by a long shot.

I had the surgery performed, the pain is still there sometimes. I can't get hit in the nuts or I'll be in pain for the rest of the day, but I still work out. As long as you wear support and don't put a lot of pressure on the nuts you should be fine.

tl;dr you can still work out, just try to avoid standing exercises like military press.
