Okay, /fit/. I'm a 5'3, 158 lb. 22-year-old woman. Yes, I know I'm overweight. I'm finally sick of it and want to do something about it. I really don't eat unhealthy, but I do unfortunately eat a lot of pasta, which I think contributes.

Anyway, my question is: will walking 30 minutes every day / other day do anything? If so, what can I expect, weight loss / tonage wise? How long would it take to start dropping weight?

What if I run for 15 minutes instead? (I'd rather do the walking for various reasons, but I might as well find out what the difference would really be).

my mom lost 50 lbs by running. she said walking never did anything for her.

Okay, so essentially do 20 seconds sprinting, 10 seconds jogging, rinse and repeat for 8 minutes total? I might have to give that a try. Thank you.

I have been lurking for forever on here, but I still haven't figured out what HIIT is exactly. I found this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-intensity_interval_training), but what exactly should I do? Pretty much what the other anon said of doing jogging, then sprinting in sets?

Yoga, and a liquid diet.

As you get in better shape, begin increasing the cycles until you hit 12 minutes. It's important that your sprints really are all you can give.

OP could you post a pic of your body? I ask in the most non-perverted way, because this girl I talk to online edited pictures of her body to look thinner but later confessed that she's not as thin as she made herself out to be. I'm really interested in her but curious to see what her body is like, I'm not sure her actual weight but her height is the same as yours.

Yes walking 30 minutes a day will do something, but only if your diet is in check. Diet is the key for weight loss.

All it matters is that her heart rate is at 90% when she is doing the highest intensity, and in the cool down state to be at 40-60%

The most important thing you have to do is count your calories. You can run for an hour and it won't make a difference if you continue to eat more calories than what you're expending.

That being said, a sort of fast walking pace of 4mph is 2 miles and about 200 calories.

OP again.

Possibly not, but I'm going to give it a try. Even if I have to start with 4 minutes, at least I'll be getting off my ass, right? And once I do that, possibly for the first week, then bump it to 8 minutes. Maybe the following week, I can go to 12 minutes. We'll see. But I am going to try my best.

My main problem is that when I don't see instant results, I get depressed (unrealistic, I know) and quit. That's why I'm wondering how long roughly it should take to see results. The other day I got pissed and went for a walk and actually felt better. I walked 1/2 a mile and got back and my legs burned. I was surprised I even got that far before quitting.

Like I said, we'll see how it goes, but it can't help to be informed.

OP here.

How could I figure that out? Should I get one of those little heart rate wristband things? Or just keep doing it until my heart feels like it's going to bust through my chest, and assume that that's 90%

Thanks for that info about the mph / distance.

Snap! Well if you could at some point that'd be pretty cool, I'm just curious is all. Thanks!

Ok, well, I drew on this random woman in shitty paint since I'm on a POS laptop. Essentially, picture upper arm chub, thigh chub and slight rolls on that woman and you get my body shape. Now, my sister is my height and weighs 145 lbs (which is technically overweight according to BMI), but she's skinnier than the chick in the photo because she plays tennis and runs 2 miles each day. Her weight comes from muscle mass.

So if the girl you're talking about admittedly is chubby and is my height / weight, she probably has the same as me: ugly love handles, upper arm chub and thigh chub (though ironically, my forearms and calves are rather skinny. Too bad the rest of me isn't!)

Hope that helped!

From my experiences exercising less than 30 minutes at your target heart rate is useless. Walking generally doesn't get you to your target heart rate but makes for a good warm up. I could be wrong but from what I've heard you basically don't even start to really burn fat until you've been at your target heart rate for about 20 minutes+.
