High sodium is bad for reasons besides water retention (if that is even a side effect). Especially if you aren't balancing it with potassium. (blood pressure, etc.)
As far as I know, sodium is irrelevant to fat loss/gain, but is most abundantly found in processed foods, which are the bane of anyone concerned about their health.
If a significant portion of your diet is natural/unprocessed/whole foods, then your sodium intake will be much lower as a result, and you might even drop a few pounds that way, too. Two birds, one stone, etc.
