Dear /fit/,

I'm looking to gain some weight. I'm about 6?4?, and weigh about 163 lbs. I'm a tall, skinny fucker, and I want to bulk up, but my matabolism is crazy fast.

I don't have access to a gym, at all. No possibility of me weight lifting. What I do have is a nearby pool. Will swimming alone help me grow muscle?

No. Swimming is cardiovascular and will burn your calories. You have to binge, lift and squat.

Oh well. Atleast swimming always makes me really fucking hungry. Tons more than running or cycling or anything else.

Guess I could still use it to gain some weight, and find a way to get me something to lift out here in the middle of fucking nowhere.

if you've never exercised much before, swimming will give you some muscle. not as much as lifting or whatever, but it's definitely a start. just be sure to eat a lot, and do pushups. pushups are great for your arms and stomach

Does it matter how I swim? Breaststroke, butterfly, etc. What will strain my body the most?

variety is the key. i used to do 2 laps of breast stroke, 2 laps of butterfly, then 2 laps of freestyle... then repeat for as long as i could. you train more muscles that way, and it keeps you from getting too bored. i'd imagine butterfly would be the most strenuous though, that shit wore me out.

OK YOU ALL NEED TO SHUT THE FUCK UP! Here's waht you do. Push yourself a LITTLE BIT, just to see how your body reacts, in my experience doctors have fucked over 5 times as many people as they have saved. curl some really light weight for a set or two, then try to do a few pushups on your knees. do a bodyweight squat, or a few depending how it feels. DO NOT OVERDO IT! very light exercise at 1st. give it a few days to see how your body feels. Go from there. good luck.

Have you ever seen a picture of Michael Phelps? All that muscle he has, which is lean functional muscle, was put on solely through swimming.

So hell yes it can put muscle on you. Get some leg weights and some resistance paddles and you can increase the benefits as well.

No you. While swimming does develop lean muscle, you have no chance of being a decent competitive, let alone olympic, swimmer without strength training.

he's got a pretty toned body, i would be suprised if he got that bod soley from swimming and no weight training whatso ever

Short answer, no. Unless you do high intensity sprints. As far as no weight lifting goes you have your body weight to lift. You have to be creative.
