They're both compound exercises. But the squat uses moar mussels, liek back and abs while leg press just works on quads and hips and no real back and ab stabilization.

If you can squat your body weight you can do weigh more on a leg press.

It's most effective for showing off. I can do full sets of 180 kilos on the thing which looks damned impressive, much more so than 50 kilo squats. It's good for making you feel like a big man.

When I'm actually working out I don't bother. Squats are better.
