Mental Health:

What are /fit/'s phobias? I'm not talking 'I think spiders are scary', I mean actual irrational fears.

Me: I'm fucking terrified of needles. The last time I had a syringe in me I started hyperventilating and almost passed out. Before that the last time I got any type of shot was when I was six, and I fought it so hard, I kicked the nurse in the face.

Your turn.

Any kind of stinging/biting flying insect. I will run from them like a pedo running from being v&. I understand that if they sting me I won't die, I'm not allergic or anything, but I don't give a shit. I'm running.

I'm a nurse who works part time on the IV team.

Your veins...I WANTZ IT!!! BWAHAHAHA

On a more serious note, I don't really have an idea how to help you. I watched as my intern dug into my arm for a minute last week trying to get a vein. She didn't...

But please find a solution. I don't like getting kicked in the head

Hey, fuck you, spiders are terrifying.
>> Anonymous
OP I share your same phobia.
I start screaming and just go into a sort of panic, I need to be held down by 5 people to get my blood taken out. I've also hurt nurses accidentally.

I don't know how to get over it. When I go to the dentist and they give me shots in the gum's it doesn't bother me, but something about the deep penetration (haha very funny) freaks the fuck out of me.

I'm often irrationally afraid that a family member has died when they take too long at something. I'm often irrationally afraid that people around me are judging me.
>> Anonymous
>>242469
I don't know how I could fix it. When I go to the dentist and get shots in my gum's I'm alright, but something about a needle actually going deep into my flesh and into a vein freaks me the fuck out.
>> Anonymous
>>242478
Me too, sort of. The pain doesn't bother me but when the teeth start to vibrate because of some machine the dentist is using it gives me the creeps.

Heights. I can take on spiders, I don't mind needles if I know about them.

Its the height.

Cold sores, Herpes, any kind of fucking herpes(and HPV), it fucking scares me to fucking death

I get jittery, sweaty and nervous around people with them, one eye is always on people's lips
>> Anonymous
None. I thought it was spiders at first, but I can deal with them.
Then I thought it was heights, but I started roofing last summer and that worked out fine.
No irrational fears.

I'm terrified of being a nobody forever, that life has no meaning. Even if our lives don't mean anything in the grand scheme of the universe, I want to at least be able to define my own purpose.

I have an irrational fear of squatz.

Flying insects make me recoil like a tank cannon. The fear is doubled if said flying insect can sting/bite.

Phobias are in your mind. Drugs do not help. You can be cured with the right tech. It works you believe it will.

Oh fuck I fucking hate hair. Like the type of hair you find in your drain all clumped up. I fucking wanna vomit when I see it and when it touches me or get close I freak the fuck out. I don't mind like regular hair its just when its clumped up and wet is when it gets to me. I always check drains and also pools before i get into them.

The fear of having foreign objects pierce your skin and shoved deep into you is rational.

Fear of heights is rational also.

People are genetically predisposed to be afraid of shit stabbing them, same with falling. Both can kill you.

>>242679

Now, the other things I can understand, but...hair?

It's just hair, dude.

Hair. Like, on your head.

Exact same situation. I don't know why it's so difficult to overcome. Getting better though, I don't pass out anymore.

Drilling at the dentist's also makes me pass out.

>>242687

Fear of heights is irrational. Fear of falling from a high place is rational.

It's the same for fear of flying. Fear of dying in a plane crash is rational, but fear of flying isn't.

Dogs.

German shepherd, mostly. When I was 5 or 6 years old, a german shepherd bit me a bit above my right ankle. It buried its teeth deep in my flesh, and I was actually rushed to the hospital. I was scared shitless of any type of dog that looked similar to that one for years.

It's gotten a lot better over time, though.

>>242644
Also this. It's fucking stupid but I keep having nightmares about them, over and over and over again. Fucking zombie apocalypse.

The dark. especially after reading /x/.
But it's a real effort to force myself to walk out there, despite the fact I think and act as though I'm 10 feet tall and bullet proof the rest of the time.

I'm not trying to sound like some internet tough guy macho ass hole, but I seriously don't have any fears. I'm not saying I wont hit the deck if someone starts shooting, I DO have normal, rational fears.

Just no phobias.

Of loneliness.

I hate free falling while upside down... but I wouldn't call that an irrational fear, more like common sense.

I hate being in the dark in a room that has a mirror. There is something I don't trust about my reflection.
>> Anonymous
My phobia is difficult to explain, it's like fear about discussing diseases or the human body. I just get extremely squeamish and turn pale, I don't know why.

I'd nearly pass out during sex-ed, I'd have to leave the room. It doesn't make any sense either because I already know the material at hand, but just hearing the teacher teaching will trigger it.

The rest of my family has a fear of needles, but I have this somehow. We're such pussies.
>> Anonymous
I hate getting shot in the abdomen. Man, the arms or legs are fine, but there's just something about a gun shot wound to the torso that gives me the willies.
>> Anonymous
Hemophopia i.e. fear of blood. It's fucking annoying, even the smallest cuts I have to go get a band aid and lie down for 5 mins to not faint =/ I can stand other peoples blood alot better then my own though.

I was diagnosed as PDD-NOS when I was three years old. The doctor predicted that I would become a non-functioning Autistic.

Early intervention by my folks let me learn to talk and become a productive member of society, but fuck it if I'm not irrationally petrified of going insane or regressing into the Autistic vegetable I was "supposed" to become and loosing everything my family and I worked so hard for.

I was bit by a dog when I was pretty young, but I luckily had a dog of my own so that didn't turn into a phobia. I'm now very conscious of my status towards a dog though. I look them in the eye and don't take any shit. I'm better and stronger than them and I want them to know.

I've been very tempted to kick the shit out of dogs that run towards me when I'm out jogging, but luckily the aggressive ones have always been held back by their owners and I can recognize the friendly ones.

I used to be afraid of minor heights. Major heights were never a problem, but I'd be terrified of a height where you'd fall and seriously hurt yourself but probably wouldn't die. I've been getting into shape and I did some roofing work last summer so I've been able to get over that as well. Self-confidence is key.

get an led light that acts as decor in your home. make sure it's in a room close enough to your bedroom that i casts some light toward you.

I use this:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70130461

during the day it makes only a small amount of light. just aesthetic. But at night it's a super sneaky low energy night light.

that and my baby puffy lamb. she protects me.

>> Anonymous
>>242860
>>242758
That's a temporary fix. Are you going to use a nightlight the rest of your life?

When you're in a familiar area that you know, entering a dark place shouldn't scare you. You take bigger risks crossing roads and venturing into public areas.

Try to be that invulnerable giant you are in comfortable areas at all times. It'll really help.

>>242887

If it's their house, then a fix is a fix, "temporary" or not. How the hell does it affect you?
>> Anonymous
>>242920
Maybe if you're a fucking hermit you'd do just fine. I know I had to face the exact problem while traveling and not everywhere I ended up had a nightlight safety mode let alone a place to plug one in. If you're okay with not actually getting over the fear, great. It's just advice.

sharks and snakes, more so sharks though, I see a snake on tv and it doesn't bother me but i see a shark on tv i can't even look it freaks me out. I can't look at snakes up close though, like in a pet store or zoo i won't fuckin' go near them.

almost everything scares me... seriously i didnt sleep for like three days in a row once because i was scared or the dark. or rather what was in the dark. but yeah needles are scary and thinking about germs.
>> Anonymous
Needles are huge for me as well.
Also, body parts. If my own leg got cut off it would just hurt, but thinking about other people getting their legs cut off/going under the knife makes me want to hurl.

public places don't bother me at all. In a public place I could just cuss out a bum or run to the nearest major intersection if some guy with a chainsaw shows up.

but alone in my own home gets creepy.
