Hello /fit/, I need your advice.

I have a very unhealthy diet. I don't work out, and I don't really participate in outdoor activities.

I can't cook, and I've lived with roommates for the past 3 years or so. Within those three years, I've eaten out about once every other day or so, and it's starting to take a toll on my body.

I have never really been fit, but I have never really been fat either. I have always been pretty balanced all my life, the fittest being when I played basketball in school. That is until recently, I think I can now officially call myself fat, not obese, but just fat, with the spare tire and the burgeoning mantits rearing their ugly heads.

But anyways, there is a point to this, I want to make a change, and I want it to be a change I can stick with and enjoy (living healthy shouldn't be a chore, it should be a lifestyle). I am not much into sports, nor is my group of friends the type to spring up and spontaneously chase each other around. I am not opposed to working out, I used to quite a bit, but have dropped out of the habit..plus I feel what I need most urgently is cardio workout, I can worry about building or toning muscle later. The one physical activity I can see myself doing and really loving it is biking, so my question is, how well will biking help my situation? How much should I bike a day? Are there any tips on efficient biking methods to aid in weight loss?

And also, I need advice to break me from my bad dieting habits. What I want to know, for a guy that can't really cook, what foods should I buy from the store to help lose weight? I know anything is better than fast food, but I also know there's a lot of things in supermarkets aren't good either. This may seem aimless, but any advice will help.

tl;dr will biking help me lose weight, and if so how much biking will this require? What foods should I focus on buying from supermarket to effectively lose weight.

1.) Learn to cook. Really, it isn't hard. You just have to try. If you don't try, you won't learn and you'll always be fat and broke because you spend too much money on fatty take-out.

2.) Buy fruits, vegetables, breads, nuts (just plain nuts, not salted, honey roast or any of that shit), beans and juices. Also, see entry 1.) above and learn to cook rice. With all that, you'll get lots of vitamins, complete proteins, and enough fiber/fat to keep you full and not hungry every twenty minutes.

3.) Yes, biking can help you lose weight. But you need to be going up hills and working pretty hard, not just cruising around town or coasting to your local McDonalds. I have a friend who rode his bike to work every day (30mins one way), and he ended up losing nearly 60 pounds. You can do it.
