hello /fit/

Now that I"m back in school I've decided to start going to the gym to get in shape/gain muscle to help for baseball.
I've been lurking a few threads about "im fat/skinny i want to lose/gain weight.. etc etc.."
I noticed that every thread has a response about eating, and I was wondering just how important is the diet in my pursuit of fitness? I've done the calorie intake calculator (3500 btw..) and it stated to stick to proteins/complex carbs/vegetables/fruits.
Now my school doesn't have the greatest of meal plans, and I also am only given 2 meals per day. I am stuck in the dilemma of trying to intake 3500 calories and fulfilling the protein/carb/etc requirement but with my current situation it seems impossible. Any suggestions/recommendations?

tl;dr is the diet REALLY as important as it's made out to be?

Holy fucking shit. 3500?

What the fuck? How much do you weigh right now?

3500 isn't that much at all. I cut on a 2500 low day 3000 high day calorie diet.

Well sorry, but being a 300+ fat ass here, my min turned out to be 2600. I'm just wondering how big you have to be to have 3500 be your calorie goal if you're trying to "get in shape."

Yes. Buy some easy to eat thing in your dorm. Cans or packages of tuna is great. Unsalted raw nuts, especially almonds. I really like peanuts and hazelnuts, too. Something whole grain that you like; there are lots of things available in crackers, flax seed, bread, or other stuff... I just don't know how much you want to watch additives and other stuff. Even popcorn can be whole grain (get a air popper). But seriously... go buy at least canned chicken or tuna and some nuts.
