Any Judofags out there? A friend of mine made the US Judo Olympic team, and it's inspired me to strive to become awesome. What does it take to become the best?
>> Anonymous
training. a lot of it.
>> Anonymous
There ain't nuttin' to it,
but to do it.
>> Anonymous
My father did it for 15 years. He used to train with Jimmy Pedro before he went to the Olympics. I forget, did that guy win the gold?

Well, that's true. But a lot of Judoka do a lot of training. And a lot of Judoka who do a lot more training than other Judoka still don't make the Olympic team. There's got to be more to becoming the best of the best than working harder than anyone else in the world.

Start training when you're a little kid, and take time off from college to train like a mad man. Also, don't train in the US. Go to Japan, Korea, France, or Brazil for really good training.

It appears that Jimmy Pedro won two bronzes and a fifth place.

Unless you have crazy natural talent like Mifune did, that is what it's all about. If you look at the legendary competitors like Kimura, it's the hard training that set them apart and made them so skilled.

Well, it's a little too late to start Judo as a kid... I'm sort of already through my first year of college. But I still think it's possible for me to become great.

Train hard and you might be able to make a name for yourself in the masters division, 30 years or older.

Beginner judofag here. I'm spending most of my summer fucking around anyway, might as well.

I'm not /that/ old yet. I've got a good eleven years to go before I hit thirty. And I've been in Judo for about two and a half. Two more Olympic games between now and then.

Boring as it may sound, try and learn the kata if you have a teacher that knows them. It will do wonders for your technique.

Train like a fucking madman. Take a few vacations and train under the masters. There's a huge difference between people that has been doing since back in the day and now.

perhaps the best person to ask would be your friend.

I usually don't say this, but at this level, at the olympic level, you gotta have some genetics too. Training is a must, but you got to have a little physical advantage or at least enough to match everyone else.

train with a 200lbs sandbag, run with it squat with it, press with it. Use a sledge and tire for conditioning, alongside other specific drills.

I've been training Judo for about 16 years now. Right now I'm more focused on BJJ, but Judo was my first love.

Here's a few ideas:
- Train as often as possible. At my club, if I went to the advanced and beginner classes I could potentially go 5 times a week (twice each on Tuesday and Thursday, brutal) but I usually ended up going 3 times per week. Sure it's kinda lame when the beginner class first starts up, but teaching newbs lets you look at things in a new light.
- Work on your physical fitness. Judo isn't about overpowering the other guy, but being strong never hurts. Also, if you have physical stamina, you can train for longer, ie, you'll get more out of a session if you're not completely wiped out halfway through.
- Compete. I didn't like competing, so I never did it. Guess what? I suck at competing now.
- Read judo books. Watch shitty videos on youtube and think about how they're doing it wrong. Watch free videos online, like this one: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3346298601525244862&q=judo&ei=Iq59SIetGZGIrgPRrpWfBQ
- Make friends with the people in your club. If you like it, you'll have a better time and be less likely to skip sessions, etc. Also, they'll want to help you when you're not quite getting something.

Hard training, cardio training, do the fucking kata you will learn something, good sparring under supervision of a excellent teacher, isometric exercise and some weight training(would reccomend okinawan weight training), a keen brain that can make snap decisions. Also learn how the human body works both physically and psychologically.

Also really practice ukemi in a meaningful way. Can't do shit if you get banged up or get paralyzed.

You must do any of the above in combination for at east three to four hours a day, plus proper diet and sleep habits.

I did judo when i was younger and got really far, even did tournaments but in a real fight it does fuck all unless they are running at you with a leather jacket on.
>> Anonymous
Well you really don't need a grabbable jacket or other article of clothing. All you need is their skin or bones if you have a good tiger claw. Causes great pain and makes a throw easier. Skin is grabbable on most people and it hurts like a motherfucker. If they try to pull away their skin gets ripped.

Besides having top physical condition, you need to start from a young age (10) and train constantly till 23. Then you, if you are talented, you are considered eligible to do randori in the olympics.

So the olympics are out of the question. But you can still become a great judoka if you find a good teacher, and understand that IN KOSHI WAZA YOU THROW WITH YOUR ASS NOT WITH YOUR ARMS AEIOJRAWO

Then apparently you sucked and did not really get it. All you need are rudimentary wrestling clinches.

bullshit- I've never had a naked man attack me, and if I don't end up in prison or a gay parade I just don´t see that happening, but if it did I would just go for the ippon seoinage or an O-goshi or any of the many judo throws where you don´t need to grab the other guy's clothing..... hell, if you have any brains at all most judo throws can be used as such - all this bullshit about judo not working if the other guy is not wearing a Gi just makes me want to break somebody's joints.
