Hey Fellas,

I'm 20 years old 5'11" and 135lbs. I just started drinking 2 protein shakes a day. I'm not gaining weight. My metabolism has always been crazy. I'm a naturally skinny guy and have been my whole life. I eat just as much as anyone else, usually worse. I work at home so I eat junk, but I'm getting better.

Have you any suggestions on how I can gain weight and some muscle? I've got almost no body fat, but would like to gain some. All I've got in my house is my wifes yoga stuff and an elliptical machine. I've got no problems pulling my own weight around, I did landscaping for a while. I can do pullups, pullups and situps no problem. But for just generally steadily gaining mass (fat and muscle) to get bigger what do you suggest? I'd like to maintain a good diet, so please don't suggest McDonalds.

I meant to say pullups, pushups and situps.

Also I'd like to avoid a gym if I could. I can't afford an entire carton of eggs to eat every fucking day either so a dozen a day is out, as I heard somebody else saying they did earlier. I'm a broke guy, so keep that in mind as well.

Are you taking two scoops (50g) of protein in your shakes? Two 2-scoop shakes is not enough protein if you want to put on a lot of mass, if that's the only protein you're getting. Try for 1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight. So that'd be around ~200 grams of protein per day for you.

Also.... get dumbells or a gym membership. Weightlifting is essential to gaining muscle, can't be done properly with just pushups and situps.

I spent about 35.00 on a huge thing of that choclate powder stuff. It's high protein and I can afford 40.00 every payday but I cant spent 5 bucks on eggs every fucking day.

Op Here, and yes two scoops and milk every day in a big shaker. They taste fucking good too. I think I actually am gaining some pudge in my small waist, now that I think of it, only after two weeks. I'll consider the dumbells for next payday. Thanks for clearing up that pushups do nothing. I guess that just burns the weight I've gained instead of turning it into muscle?
The elliptical is for my wife, she uses that and does yoga, I made her quit smoking so she turned into a chubby.

Op Here: For my situation what size dumbells should I start with? 10-15lbs used in various workouts is my guess.

The problem with pushups is that you're always working with the same weight (your bodyweight) so you can't modify it to suit your needs. You can make them a bit harder with different hand positions but it's not a full body workout by any means. When you're trying to put on muscle you need to take a weight that causes muscle failure after a certain number of repetitions (between 5 to 10 usually).

For starting out with dumbells... you'll probably need 10s for stuff like flys, and 25s for curls and rows. But it might be better to try yourself to see what weight induces muscle failure.

Thought so. Thanks a ton, I'll definitely consider buying some weights next time I get paid.

Appreciated /fit/, first time poster is happy!

Also my legs are REALLY fuckin skinny. Will riding a bike improve this? I live in seattle so theres plenty of hills and the weather is great now. Or would riding a bike be just as useless as pushups?

riding a bike is great, and those hills will really develop your legs, however you're looking at doing 25-30 miles a day

Op here - 25 miles A DAY? Holy fuckin shit. I'm asthmatic. I think I'll cut back a bit on the legs.

Hey man, late to the party I know but I know exactly where you're coming from. It's like you are describing me in your OP (22 yrs btw).

I eat just as much as anyone I know, but I don't put anything on. It's so easy for me to shed weight (god knows where it goes, coz i don't build muscle well!!).

And yeah, I've tried that protein stuff - waste of money IMHO.

I know this isn't what you wanna hear, but I've just learnt that I'm not going to change (save eating McD every day, which I would never do - a good diet is more important to me).

Change the way you dress and stuff to compliment your figure, I know it sounds corny, but I hope you read this and know I've got your back!

Previous poster here, I forgot to add...

Have you worked out your BMI?

Weight (kg) / Height^2 (m)

Mine is a steady 18, yours comes out as around 18.8. Like I said, your stats are very similar to mine.

If you look at the Wiki entry for BMI, you will see that 18 is the lower limit for 'normal'! So us guys are still healthy, just we probably could do with a bit more fat in places!

The problem with having hardly any fat for me is having an amazing chest, but shitty arms :D

How many meals you eating?

Anything below 7?
Problem 1.

Atleast 30g of protein with each meal?
Below 200g total, problem 2.

You drinking any milk? Try an extra litre or two of that.

Look at westside for skinny bastards for a good exercise program.

Kinesiologist here.

If you want to gain muscle, thats simply not going to happen unless

1.you're exposing your muscles to a stress greater than they are used to with

2. a positive caloric intake.

You accomplish the first by getting some weights, and lifting them. Use heavy weights and progressive resistance.

You accomplish the second by eating at McDonalds. YOU WILL NOT GAIN MUSCLE UNLESS A POSITIVE CALORIC EXISTS!!!

Read this article, it will help you a ton.

If you're a skinny guy who can't put on muscle you NEED to eat a lot. You may think you are eating a ton, but until you're eating seven meals and 7000 calories a day you really aren't.

Ah, thanks! (Not OP, I'm the second guy)!
