Alright /fit/, I've come to realize that I'm a fat fuck (220 lbs, 5'11") and I want to do something about it. I am completely and utterly out of shape and haven't done exercise in a long ass time.

That being said, I've decided on a "eat less, move more" plan. How many calories should I eat daily? What should I eat? I'm going to join a gym asap, but until then is jogging an hour daily a decent amount of exercise?

Pic unrelated.

Figure out your BMR (basal metabolic rate- google it. It tells you approximately how many calories a day it takes your body to function). Eat that many calories.

Eat whole grains (whole wheat pasta and bread, oatmeal, etc.), lean meats, low-fat or fat-free dairy, and lots of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Aim for 6-8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
Look up approximate portion sizes and stick to it (tip- a serving of meat is about the size of a deck of playing cards).
Eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full but not stuffed. Learn what "hungry" and "satisfied" feel like. Watch for eating out of boredom.
When you begin to feel hungry, drink a large glass of water and wait, then reevaluate how you feel. Lots of people confuse hunger and thirst.
Don't skip meals, as this leads to overeating later.

Aim for exercising 30-60 minutes a day 3-6 days a week. As you get fitter, add weight training to your cardio. Don't push to the point of injuring yourself.

TL;DR- Eat less, but better and smarter. Exercise more, but safely.

I commend you on your desire to lose weight. Eating less and and running for an hour a day will help you in your quest. Be prepared to feel pain however, because when you burn fat you have to use two and a half times the amount of oxygen it normally takes to burn carbs or protein. So Again as I said be prepared to feel out of breath because, of said weight lose :-D.

PS I am a marathon runner in real life and trust me it just takes practice.
