OP: Machines are never as good as free-weights. That said, you can 100% certainly make fantastic gains on them, although you should never completely forgo freeweights. Due to time/money constraints, I am forced to use machines almost 80% of the time. Is it ideal? Fuck no. Am I a n x-box hueg guy who's really going to be a good poster boy for machines? Hell no. But it's not like working out on some machines is as bad as most people make it out to be, honestly. You're not kidding yourself, but try to integrate as much free-weight stuff as possible.
