That is the way to do a proper squat.
Now, for equipement, you need a barbell (or dumbells), and a squat rack. If you can't afford this, try front squats (below).
Front squat technique is also described in the above link. It doesn't require a squat rack and you will use lighter weights (but as challenging) weights. You can also do front squats with a variety of objects, such as an inexpensive sand bag, or just a barbell.
