Hi /fit/, ive jsut started working out and am trying to build a routine so that all this excercise and dieting becomes habit and nature. my question is if i want to work upper body one day and lower the next and alternate as so, when my upper body day comes up and im still sore, do i keep up with the same routine (keep in mind i DO alternate excercises and muscle groups) even thogh im sore?

Yes, if they're still sore they haven't repaired properly and you wont get an efficient work out. Over training muscles is bad and can be detrimental to your overall development.

Soreness has nothing to do with overtraining - overtraining is a systemic reaction to working too hard.

I would suggest that OP stick with his program as scheduled, except it is an idiotic program for a newbie. As far as weights are concerned, he should be doing whole body workouts...

Sore muscles = unrepaired muscles

Continuing to train with unrepaired muscles = overtraining

where did you get this idea?

Wikipedia:
>>Overtraining occurs when the volume and intensity of an individual's exercise exceeds their recovery capacity

That means being tired as shit, unable to increase weight or volume in workouts, or even getting weaker. It does not mean being sore.

Newbie weightfags CANNOT overtrain if they're lifting 3-4 x a week for an hour at a time - they're simply incapable of doing enough work. Too much cardio or HIIT on top of the weights can be harmful, and that's what should be reduced if there are any problems. But OP does not describe any problems, just soreness.

tl;dr you are a pussy if you skip a workout 'cause your muscles are sore

What? Are you serious? Growth occurs during recovery. Builders work every muscle group on different days, usually with rest days, for optimal growth. Hitting sore muscle groups again may not exceed your recovery capacity and/or make you weaker, but you're curbing the potential growth from the initial session.

soreness is not an indicator of anything, aside from the fact that your muscles are sore. after you've been lifting for a while you almost never get sore, does this mean that it becomes impossible for you to over train because you've been lifting for two weeks and stop getting sore?

so if my regimen is retarded for a newbie, what would /fit/ recomend for weight loss other than dieting?
