>>468048 Haha, wishful thinking. They are completely different in focus. Long distance, slower pace will build cardio endurance, and the focus is upon strengthening your respiratory system. Shorter distance, quicker pace is nearly anaerobic, and the focus is upon strengthening your reactive muscles. You are training your body for extreme physical strain. A combination of the two allows you to move faster longer.
Running 10 minutes very fast will not expend your 50 units, and is something you only do occasionally unless you are training to be a sprinter. Pro runners expend those same 50 units + do speed workouts every other day.
