If running is too painful, start walking long distances. Also try power walking shorter ones.
I'm pretty skinny, but when I start to run after not running for a few months, it usually hurts for the first week or so. Once I get through that it becomes very natural.
Just build yourself up. Running will obviously help you quicker than walking, but if it hurts too much to run, start with walking. Try walking to places you might normally drive to.
