Overweight people may live longer Anonymous
Being moderately overweight could actually be good for you, say researchers.

People who are a little overweight are likely to live longer than people who are underweight or obese, a study shows.

A BMI of 18.5 to 25 is considered normal. One below 18.5 is considered underweight and 30 or above is considered obese.

The researchers found that the people who had BMIs higher than 25 but lower than 30, which meant they were moderately overweight but not obese, did not have a reduced life expectancy.

The people who lived the longest of all were those with BMIs of 25, which lies between the ideal and overweight margins.

In comparison, there were 112,000 extra deaths among the obese category and nearly 34,000 extra deaths among the underweight category.

Being fit isn't about living longer, it's about looking good.
If you don't understand that then you don't belong on this board.

After this, in combination with the story last week about drinking a lot of water not being good for you, I'm starting to think that scientists are just having a big laugh.

look at the source though... the "scientists" are britfag government researchers.... and the british government has been REAL BIG lately into arguing that fatness isn't unhealthy...

also, BMI sucks hairy balls as an indicator of body composition... skinfold test and bio-electrical impedence machines win... the most ripped guys I know are all considered obese by BMI because... oh wait muscle is dense compared to fat.

The studies that use the BMI as their guideline are worthless. The BMI is stupid.

>the most ripped guys I know are all considered obese by BMI

You do realize that that means they're more likely to die than someone with a "normal" BMI, correct?

Have you seen the studies they've done on chimps and other animals? Slightly overweight animals always live longer than either animals that are extremely fat, animals that are extremely muscular or animals that are thin.

PS: I just want to add that I also think the study is retarded and that I'd need to see the actual results before I'd be willing to really take it seriously. And like Anon said before, bring fit is more of a personal challenge/attractiveness thing for me. It isn't some attempt to try to live longer or whatever.

sage for fatties trying to convince us that being fat is normal

Interesting study.
Can anyone find the hard data?
I want to see if they controlled for muscle mass or if they were just looking solely at BMI and ignoring the relative fitness of each individual.
