Running and Height Anonymous
I heard that excessive weight lifting can stunt your growth. I also heard somewhere that running a marathon puts so much strain on your muscles that it can cause them to contract, making you shorter.
Does excessive running stunt height growth. I'm going to be a 10th grader next year and my friend wants me to train and run a marathon (like 20 something miles). I'm only 5'5" right now and I wanna grow! Advice please /fit/?
PS
He said we'd probably do like 25 miles a week just training.

Running marathons are stupid. The ancient greek guy that ran the message 25 miles to his city to warn about persians? He was a a messenger boy. Do you want to be a messenger boy or a badass warrior? Because warriors lift weights.

He also died of exhaustion when he got there.

i ran one last march, if it would shrink you i don't know.

25 miles a week won't prep you for a marathon...

I've been weight training for various reasons my entire life (football in jr. high, wrestling in high school, just wanting to since I was 22) and I'm 6'3". If excessive weight training stunts your growth I should be 7'5".

So no, it doesn't. It's your genetics and nothing more.

Weight lifting will only stunt your growth if your growth plates haven't closed yet. Hence why it is advised that teenagers don't lift excessively heavy weights.

As for the marathon, no clue.
>> Anonymous
a males growth plates cease to produce around age 15-16.. why would muscular hypertrophy cause it? unless there is BAD form with impact and stress then there shouldn't be a problem for any teen 14+ to begin a novice weight training plan, below that age i wouldn't suggest it.

You aren't gonna run a marathon off 25 miles a week there kiddo.

Most of the males in my family are 5 foot 9, and I'm 5 foot 8 1/2", only difference is I lifted heavy when I was too young to know any better.

Still, it's only a half inch, no one notices unless we're put back to back.

Goddam you. He ran to SPAAAAARRRRRTA and back, then ran to marathon, fought and ran ahead to athens to spread the news. And died of exhaustion.

The entire athenian army also made the same 25 mile run after the battle.

You can, you just won't break 3 hours.

Weight lifting has NOT been proven to stunt growth unless you injure your neck or spine in the process...so bad form could contribute, but regular lifting with proper form will not stunt your growth. I used to think the same thing because all of my friends that are ripped happen to be short, then i met their parents :P Again, its all genetics, as>>186700
said. As for running, never heard anything of it stunting your growth, most runners i know are tall but thin as hell (even the cross country runners)

I've been running long distances since middle school. I'm 18 and 5'11'' now so I wouldn't say my growth has been stunted.

Does anyone else have any endurance running messenger-boy fantasies? I used to imagine I was carrying a message oh so many miles in order to save cities and shit... got me hyped up to last through it.

True story. Then I also thought I was like goku having to fly/run as fast as possible for as long as it'd take to go save gohan and krillin and vegeta from Freeza on Namek and shit. Feels good, man.

Your height depends on your genes, running wont stunt your growth fully and leave you 5' 5" the rest of your life. My dad is around 5' 11" & my mom is around 5' 2". My brother and sis who are both older than me by 3 & 2 years are the same height at 5' 5" & im around 5' 7-8". So run if you like it wont do much.

doesnt height also have to do with nutrition and stuff?

To a point, but genes are about 90% of it. You can take certain (and not very recommended) drugs that will increase your growth as a kid, but they screw you up BIG time.

This is false.

its all genetics.

PROTIP: Your spine gets compressed after running extremely long distances (Marathons and longer), so you'll *temporarily* lose up to 3" in height.

Nothing a couple good night's rest can fix.
>> Anonymous
Lifting heavy weights and continuous running can compress your spine, lay off for a bit and it your height will come back. Alternately theres exercises you can do that will fix it for you.

If it were based 90% on genetics how is it that asian americans are significantly taller than normal asians? its not like the emigration process selects for genetically taller asians.

it's pretty much accepted in soccer that excessive running can affect your growth due to constant compression of the spine and in the ankles/knees. i've heard c. ronaldo had limited playing time when he was younger b/c of his obvious star potential, to assure he grew to his full height.

i'm going against my better judgement here and responding as if you're not trolling.
1. you shouldn't even think about running a marathon until you're done growing anyway.
2. you shouldn't even think about running a marathon until you know exactly how far it is.
3. you shouldn't even think about running a marathon until you've had at least one full season of training 60 miles a week and racing distances like 5k, 8k, 10k, maybe 15k or 20k if you're already experienced with above.
also,
>>186843
lol understatement. you'd be lucky to run under 4 with a "base" of 25 a week.

running is for bitches
start with some light weighted main body exercises
i mean squatz, bench press, olympic lifting
these will all increase hGH naturally, making your bones grow to there full potential, but don't do too heavy weights because that will prevent full growth because the hGH your body is releasing right now is for your bones, muscles mature fully at age 30,
milk always
