Martial Arts Conflict Anonymous
Hello /fit/;

need your opinion on something commonly discussed.

I'm currently trying to decide whether I should go for boxing, but the gyms around here seem corporate.

So, mainly; I'm looking for a class that can let me practice martial arts for self-defense and helps me build a better body.

So far; I've narrowed the gyms and dojos around my area to these type of martial arts; Kick-boxing, Brazilian Jiujitsu, Crazy Monkey Defense, Aikido, Judo, Sambo, MMA, and Karate.

So, /fit/. Please share your opinions with me.

Everything on the list except aikido, maybe karate depending on the class, and maybe crazy monkey defense unless it's the same thing as crazy monkey boxing.

>practice martial arts for self-defense
Go for: Brazilian Jiujitsu, Sambo, MMA. These are the "most practical" martial arts on that list.

>and helps me build a better body
That would depend on each dojo, not the style. Some instructors will work your muscles to the bone, where as others will focus on techniques.
>> Anonymous
>>409685

Haha. Well, I do admit it would be awesome to punch a gang full of thug's heads off, and then watch the decapitated heads explode; I don't think there is a dojo around here that teaches Hokuto Shinken

>>409687
>These are the "most practical" martial arts on that list.
You forgot Judo and kick boxing. OP should also add regular boxing to the list.
>> Anonymous
>>409690

I did. But it seemed corporate. And I don't want to be scammed.

For self defense most BJJ schools are not going to be the places you want to go to first. It's the art for learning ground work, which is important if you get knocked down, but in most places not enough attention is paid to what to do standing while standing up. I would say do Judo or wrestling for a little while before doing BJJ if self defense is one of your main goals.
>> Anonymous
If the karate schools don't train for something like this,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK-23qBlMpg

or even better yet this,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsiqBsAOFEk

then don't bother.
>> Anonymous
If I were you i'd take MMA and maybe supplement it with Judo if you have enough money/time

MMA will give you basic everything on that list (except monkeyshit and aikido), and Judo can allow you to supplement both your groundwork and (contrary to popular belief) your throws.

Judo also allows you to work with the gi, and (depending on your climate) most people tend to wear clothes
>> Anonymous
>>409726

this + look into boxing... if you can find a good place to learn legit boxing, i'd probably take MMA + the boxing

your only options should be judo, BJJ or boxing. They are great. one thing i noticed about boxing (from my own experience) is that it is easy to adapt to and is the simplest form of self defense. You will be able to stand up to90% of the people on the street with about 6 months of dedicated boxing lessons.

or even worse, krav maga or systema.
>> Anonymous
>>409841
not even remotly. Aikido is almost as useless. But why would you take a gayed out sportified version of bad ass japanese jujutsu...makes no sense
>> Anonymous
>>409841
because its more applicable to spar with restricted (but effective) techniques rather than practicing pre-determined routines against knife attacks. Give me someone that knows how to throw a RNC anyday of the week than someone who practicies pressures point attacks on a dummy or practicies secret ball crushing death techniques on another dummy.
>> Anonymous
Brazilian Jiujitsu, MMA - both would be both practical AND good body shaping.

Judo - Not sure about this one but would love to try it out.

Crazy Monkey Defense - sounds like a money scam and stupid. if it happens to be digit it MIGHT be worthwhile but I doubt it.

Aikido - mostly throws, rolls and joint techneques. do not think it will keep you that fit.

Kick-boxing - pretty impractical on the streets, BUT would be a great workout.

Sambo - I know nothing.

Karate - seems to focus a LOT on proper technique, thus lacking in building a better body.
>> Anonymous
>>409845
Most Japanese Jujutsu schools are useless. They're almost all kata based schools. The ones that do spar have mostly adopted the Judo framework, so you might as well do Judo instead.

The crazy monkey thing is actually legit and works really well for defense against striking. It was developed by a pro boxer, Rodney King (no not that rodney king).

OK, I say this with much respect for many martial arts on this list
>kick-boxing
could make you fit
>bjj

>crazy monkey defense
if you mean monkey-style kung fu, enjoy the big ups you develop
>aikido
don't do this--many, many aikido masters are fat, and that's for a reason: you don't fucking move in aikido
>judo

>samba

>mma

>karate
depends, but i'd say doing kata won't make you fit unless the dojo has you doing hardcord exercise as well, but then that's not the martial art you're doing, but just regular exercise

<3 judo, love how more people are doing it in MMA, its a good foundation for any MAist (think the jack of all trades for grappling, there is ground work and great takedowns from the clinch,
>> Anonymous
Whatever you do, make sure it's a school that does full-contact, full-speed sparring.

None of this "compliant partner" BS. None of this half-speed or kata crap.

I started boxing for fun. But, damn, it came in handy more than once.

A good mma gym is nice, because you'll have a boxing coach to help you with punching, a muay thai coach to help you with, well, muay thai, and a grappling/bjj coach to help you with ground stuff.

I know a guy who did akido for 10 years. He had a black belt. He got his ass handed to him by a BJJ white belt (dude had about 3 months of experience). Now he does BJJ, and recently got his black belt.

the momment you throw a punch that is called assult. The best defense is knowing how to run away from a possible fight. Not only getting tossed in jail. but you never know if the asshole you might fight is going to shank you with a fucking knife ( which i doubt any boxer or MMA fighter can counter) or start whipping out a gun (lol i am going to stay and punch the asshole in the face as he pumps me full of lead) or 3 other guys come in and stomp you to death.

The best defense is to run, and parkour is a good way of keeping fit and defending yourself by avoiding fights completely

Dear OP,
Your best bet is to just go to the various schools and ask to take part in a class. Usually schools offer a free trial class.
Also understand that even though it's a "karate" school, there is a good chance your instructor is proficient in other aspects.

So if you are in say... An alley... And 2 dudes sneaks up behind you and your girlfriend and they pull her over by the hand and they say that they are gonna fuck you up. Whats the best option?

1. You have practiced i.e. boxing for 6 years, so you neutralize them with two punches each. Without getting punched yourself or hurting your girlfriend, of course. Then you leave the alley quietly, and go home.
2. You are a computergame-twat so you run away, you try to find a cop desperately for 1½ min, when they arrive. The guys are gone, WITH your girl or they are gone but she lies on the ground, beaten to a pulp.
3. You take out your penis and fap in their faces.

No, my friend was beaten to hell by 5 fucking cowards when he was going home from a party 5 days ago... He didnt even know who they were, where is your witnesses and policemen now?

Yes running away seems like an easy option, but you dont always have any other options than to fight or be a coward and run away from your friends or girl.
>> Anonymous
>>410409
So you are going to the cops the next day and say what...?
"A guy hit me in the face yesterday, i dont know who he is or where he lives... I just know he has dark hair... FIND HIM WILL YOU?!"

most punches aren't going to instantly KO a guy, if they did most UFC matches would last 9 seconds. 2 vs 1 is real bad odds. PLUS having a freaking out girl behind you to distract you. sounds like you should yell at the top of your longs to bring attention to you, grab the girl and haul ass.
>> Anonymous
>>410419
you may get away but, they are likely to catch her.

this whole argument is kinda stoopid, once you learn how to fight people tend to leave you alone and go find weaker pray.
>> Anonymous
>>410427
how the fuck do people know you can fight unless you advertise and brag to people you are a TUF guy and try to pick fights. MA doesn't all of a sudden give you an air of power and fear.
>> Anonymous
>>410427
and how are they going to catch her with i am holding her by the arm and fucking running too?
>> Anonymous
>>410419
what makes you think that the guy grabbing her arm plan to let go? Hahaha are you going to run out of the alley with your girlfriend AND the badguy? :O Good plan.

>>410424
Well a streetfight with two guys without any ringexperience is QUITE DIFFERENT let me tell you. Yes two punches(one jab and one straight) to an unguarded head WILL probably knock you out, if the boxer is trained that is :) I could probably(without bragging) knock one out with only a jab(i practice jeetkunedo-like-jabs). And even if you dont knock them OUT you can always knock them DOWN and then run.

Im not saying that fighting is always a necessity, but in some situations - it is. Just face reality guys, you lose. You cant always sprint from a situation, it all depends on WHEN, WHERE, WHO and WHY.
>> Anonymous
>>410430MA doesn't all of a sudden give you an air of power and fear.

I've done Wado-ryu karate for a year, then switched to aikido after moving somewhere with no Wado clubs. I also gave judo a go.The others I only know as much about as can be found via wikipedia & youtube.

Judo will get you fit, how good it is for self defence depends on the school, but even one focused on sports judo will teach you something useful.

Aikido won't get you fit unless you train like crazy, as for self defence it can range from near useless to very effective depending on style and teacher, but in any case it's not a quick art to learn- hasn't put me off though.

Karate should get you fit, but again self defence practicality depends on style, organisation and teacher.

MMA is good for both I'm sure, but I doubt you could keep training into your 80's. I've seen some pretty hard judo, jujitsu, karate and aikido instructors that age.

Just so everyone knows:
average fights lasts around 1-2 minutes

1. if ur good, and ur enemy is not = prolly end fast under 1 minute and u win
2.if u guys both suck = still under 2 minutes, you guys wont have the strength and stamina
3. if u guys are both good = it could last 2 or more min.
there's exceptions btw

I would suggest because its well balanced and has muay thai
and also, i would rather take kung fu because everyone is into BJJ, MMA, Karate, and Kick-Boxing. Try something unusual

The only moderately good one out of what you listed is
kick boxing. Boxing is clearly the best, if you're looking
for a toned strong body its the way to go. Its not just arm
work out its a work out for the whole body. Its intense
and fun. This is coming from the laziest girl in the country.
Boxing is by faaaaar the greatest. Plus, theres
passion and technique in boxing, aswell as a history
not just a modern-gimmick that some oriental person

THEY ALL WORK

you get out what you put in

i cant escape the feeling that most people look to these 'magic pills' in society to escape the fact that you must put in HARD MUTHERFUCKING WORK to ever achieve something great with your body

faggots, if weights are 'too hard for you' and going to the gym 'is too difficult' and going for a run 'is too hard'
then guess what? so will ANY martial art
it is absolutely not the 'gentle' way...

if i had to do something, i'd pick an art that was also used by 3rd parties to assess legitimacy, ie. other sporting groups (MMA-->bjj+muaythai), olympics (boxing+judo), spec-ops (sambo, juijitsu), etc.

I personally suggest first doing a martial art that you find fun. That will keep you interested, and more likely to keep doing it and pick up a second martial art as well. I started on karate (Okinawan Goju Ryu, it's basically fast and close with some jujitsu thrown in), and I now want to do boxing (for the great defense) and jujitsu (for the ground). I also would like to do a form of kung fu, just because it looks fun as hell.

Karate, at least the form I know, emphasizes a lot of technique. You'll be learning katas and shorter sequences (we call them bukens, idk what others call them), then breaking them down and applying each move in the kata to a street-practical situation. The hard part is that there's a different technique for every move the opponent and you might make, and knowing those on the fly takes years of practice.

If you're looking for something quick and practical, I wouldn't suggest karate. It's great for the long term, though. If you DO pick karate, I highly suggest one where sparring isn't boiled down to who can get their foot closer to the other person for a point. It's not practical at all. Use that on a random dude, and you'll successfully whack the guy on the arm with your foot just before he tackles you to the ground (that's why I don't have much respect for TKD... it's maybe the least practical MA out there, unless you have lightning-fast legs of steel that can get from the ground to someone's chin in a few milliseconds).

So yeah, the obvious choice should be to take something that interests you. They'll ALL teach you how to calm your nerves and think rationally when facing an opponent, and that's hugely important.

Theres a couple of good Sambo schools here in california, the schools come in and compete with the judo and bjj guys in submission grappling tournies. Also i heard that Washington, Oregon, and Nevada have pretty large Russian immigrant populations, they probably have some sambo schools set up

in that order.

This is sort of what I felt like when I was doing ninjitsu, it was all about what to do if said attacker tugs on your shirt and shit like that....

Although my teacher had iron balls and really seemed to be able to disarm anyone with ease...

He had me stand in the kickboxing defence that I already did at the time, and he did 2 weird hits in my forearm while I was blocking.... and I lost control of my fucking arms!!! They just fell asleep for fuck sakes, and left him free to my face if he was serious about it.

Anderson Silva is going to lose tonight mark my words

Maybe you eat too much salt. Try weighing yourself at the same time every week, too. Earliest in the morning (when you get out of bed) is best. Take a dump first, too.

Wait, is that Sambo a legit Commando Sambo gym? If that's the case then use that. A preview of what you'd get would be Sergei Dragunov on Tekken5:DR.

But I'd go for kickboxing for physical fitness, but for mental fitness I train Aikido and Karate.

But it depends on what you want OP.

It shouldn't really matter. Sport Sambo is great too, basically Judo with more grips, leg locks, and no chokes.
>> Jin !W8AR1lF3yw

Yeah, that's true, but in OPs case he'd want an art for self-defense, and I think that Commando Sambo is what he'd get. Although I never found a gym here where I live in.

i also has a martial arts question,

I can think of few things better for general self defense than a grappling style that puts a large emphasis on standing and throwing.

You might want to look into a combined Traditional/sport Katate with Jiu-Jitsu
It's what I do, we'll do techniques in rows, and kata with deep stances, but then we'll also do agility and strenght training, grips and breakfalls.
It's pretty win, except that the sensei is a dick

I notice a lack of sparring/randori/kumite in your description.

the Kumite is interspersed between everything else, and ranges from 1,3, and 5-step to full-contact free sparring.

That's good to know. I was a bit worried for you there. Does it in any way resemble this?

Hey, that's kind of what I do.

We have two instructors, one of them specialising in jujutsu, does doorman work, police and military personnel training etc. The other instructor is this sadistic karate-do ex-cage fighter.

We basically do free ground fighting, technique work, reality based security drills (like Krav Maga), kick boxing, MMA.

Like someone else has said, OP, you should either go with something you're interested in, or a complete system like Sambo. And even then, it all depends on the instructor.

I am>>414418, doing japanese jujutsu + karate, both of which have been dismissed in this thread. However, I have awesome intructors that make it really good. I'm still in high school so I don't get into bar fights or get mugged, but being shorter than average I do get guys try and harass me. That's when 'non-lethal' jujutsu locks and self-defence drills come in handy. And being school fights, people actually fight 'fair' and you don't get the other guys friends sneak up on you. That's where groundfighting really shines.

Being a well-rounded system, I am mildly proficient in most aspects of MA (grappling, striking, non-lethal, self-defence) and now I can go to other dojos to specialise and expand on what I already know.

tl;dr - Sambo, or whatever will get you going to the gym with enthusiasm
