Drinking piles on the pounds? Anonymous
sup /fit/

a few questions:

1.ive heard alot of people saying lager/beer throw on the pounds, true?

2. do spirits(vodka,jd etc) also pile on the weight?

3. if i go drinking say... once a week where i exceed my daily alcohol units will that effect me?

note: i go 2 the gym every day and physically exert my self alot, with a mix of treadmills and weights/machines.

Alcohol is not only a ton of extra calories, it also slows down your metabolism and will, iirc, be burned by your body for energy instead of whatever you just ate. What you at will end up stored as fat. This is all I know, and probably wrong. However, I can't imagine that a beer a day would hurt all that much if you work out a lot.

No, it's just that beer makes you hungry, and you eat more so you gain weight from eating, not the beer

I've heard heard differently from a number of sources, but I love beer and would love to be proved wrong. Can you link me to where you got that information, or to something similar?

Okay, found some myself. Here's an article supporting your side. I haven't checked out the sources yet:
http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/AlcoholCaloriesAndWeight.html

I'm not sure how much I trust it, looking at their "Bar Exam" page.

Stuff arguing that beer makes you a fatty. However, they do seem to address carbs instead of etoh. More sources as I find them:

Alcohol spikes your metabolism, you motherfucker. I mean, seriously. It's something your body tries really fucking hard to get rid of. How the fisting fuck does that lower you motherfucking metabolism?

Sweet fisted raptor jesus - the cunts on this board and their cunting misinformation are too fucking hard to fucking take some days. FUCK.

Yeah, when you drink alcohol, you end up burning that along with your meal, which means lots of extra calories which means you become a fat tard. Alcohol specifically becomes "beer gut" fat which makes you look extra ugly.

I like you.

OP: I've read that spirits are lower in calories but are almost pure sugar, whereas beer is higher in calories but contains mostly just carbohydrates.

I may be wrong but this is what I've seen from different sites.

From the ratebeer.com fitness article:
"Beer is a depressant and it will slow your metabolism. Double whammy, since beer has a lot of mostly non-nutritional calories anyway. To combat this, get some reasonable exercise in the afternoon before a night out drinking. Exercising will raise your metabolism for about 12 hours, in addition to the calories that you burn while working out. Remember to keep your water intake high if you do this!"

From http://www.fitness-health.co.uk/metabolism.htm:
"Alcohol provides empty calories. No nutritional benefit is derived from alcohol. Alcohol is 7 calories per gram, which is almost as high as fat in caloric content. In addition alcohol temporarily slows down the metabolism. The effect of this is that less fat is burned (lower BMR). Generally, high fat foods are consumed with alcohol, which makes matters worse. Also, alcohol inhibits the liver from metabolizing fat." (The "no nutritional benefit" part is not true for unfiltered beer, which is high in b12)

I miss 7chan. There was no troll spillover from /b/.

An ounce of Vodka has 65 calories in it. This contains roughly the same alcohol content as a bottle of beer. That being said, the average bottle of 5% alcohol beer contains about 150 calories.

Therefore, only drink hard liquor. Avoid liquers and beer as much as possible.

Read the article from the ratebeer link. You should be fine.

Of course, the real question is are you getting in shape with what you're doing right now? If not, work harder. If so, sure, add a beer.
