Protein Powder moose
What is it for?

I know it's supposed to help you build muscles, but what if I don't work out much? What happens if you drink protein shakes but don't work out? Where does it all go? Out the pooper?

Can it replace/supplement meat? Because this stuff seems cheaper than buying meat, don't have to cook it either.

You see, I'm Asian and I'm raised to eat a FUCK TON of rice and just enough meat and vegetable to help me stuff down more rice. And I only have 2 meals a day. I think my diet is probably ~70% rice, and the rest is 50% meat, 50% vegetables.

So I'm thinking of getting some protein shake to drink in between meals so I can eat smaller meals and because I think I might not be getting enough protein. It'd also be great if it fills me up so I can eat less rice as well because for the two days I've lurked in /fit/, I always see people say cut out white bread and rice, etc.

I don't really work out much right now, some huge black guy at the community centre told me a long time ago to do situps pushups and squats so I do them whenever I feel like / remember to which is around 1-2 times a week. Right now I can do 35 sit-ups, followed by 15 pushups, then 30ish squats but I don't really improve or improve very slowly. I also play badminton in the weekends approximately every other week.

I do hope to start biking again as soon as it's warm enough. I used to bike regularly last year, and I felt like I could squat forever (like 80, before I get really bored). Now I feel pathetic when my thighs start burning at 30.

And I'm 178 cm tall without shoes on and weight 67 kg. So I'm not 'fat' unlike the majority of thread starters around here. I also don't have much muscle.

Anyway, getting side tracked.

Goal: 1) Eat healthier, 2) produce less fat and more muscle.

Get protein shake as snack, yay or nay?

Where should I buy them? (I want cheap.) Online? Walmart? Zellers?

I know I should look for whey protein isolates, but which brand / flavour tastes good and is cheap?

After reading 7-chan's FAQ, I'm also going to grab some multivitamins. Any recommendations on that is also welcomed.

Thanks!

tl;dr

You only truly need protein if you're dedicated to putting on muscle mass without gaining too much body fat. If you take it and you don't work out, it's the same as eating anything else: whatever calories you don't expend will turn to fat.

ie, you only really need protein if you want to ingest a lot of protein without taking in a whole lot of calories. If won't hurt you to take it as a snack, but since you're not lifting heavily, I don't know how much it'll actually help you.

I tend to order from http://www.massnutrition.com/ as I find them to usually have the cheapest prices, but your mileage may vary. I like Optimum Nutrition.

Protip: You don't need supplements after some pushups and situps.

Hmm alright, I thought I had a brilliant idea when I though I could replace real food (rice) with protein supplement.

I guess it doesn't really work that way and will just make my calories go through the roof?

No clue where I can get egg whites.
I guess I can buy some canned tuna / salmon to make sandwich with. Don't cost that much.
Will scoop up some nuts next time I'm at the supermarket.

However, I'm taking omega 3 fish oil capsules so I THINK I'm set with regard to that.

>the rest is 50% meat, 50% vegetables

The rest means the remaining 30%.

Your body needs protein regardless if you workout or not. The average persons diet today does not contain enough complete proteins. Whey Protein is great for anyone, I suggest you get some.

Whey protein shakes are best before and after a workout, since the protein in them is pushed into the bloodstream rather quickly.

So if you're not working out hard, you don't need it.

You should of said the other two are 15%.

If you're lifting weights you should take in about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. If you're doing a lot of cardiovascular activity, you can take that down to 0.7 grams per pound of body weight.

Doing the same exercises every week for 3 months won't net you any muscle mass. At some point it just becomes redundant and your muscle fibers aren't tearing to compensate for the extra stress (muscular hypertrophy). Body weight exercises are good for a period of time in order to get build a little bit of muscle, but you're going to have to add weights at some point.

Drink a lot of water if you plan to take in some sort of protein shake. You don't want to damage your kidneys with the excess protein intake.

It's funny because too much protein can lead to protein poisoning,

An inactive adult doesn't need much protein. If you weigh 130 pounds, a piece of salmon would net you almost 60% of the "necessary" daily values. Don't go giving this boy any crazy ideas.
