What does /fit/ think of beef jerky?

It has a crapton of protein, incredibly low fat, and tastes fucking great. However, the downside is that it has A LOT of sodium. Even with that, would jerky be good as a bulking food or should you really just stay away from it because of the massive amounts of sodium?

Stay away from it.

Lots of sodium and it's expensive.

I'm sure there must be a low sodium one. Not OP btw

Man up and eat it. Lots of salt gives you big veins. Also heart attacks.

Jebus, /fit/ over exaggerates when it comes to sodium.

How's the sodium in these?

this is why I hate europe, cant find jerky in every fucking store

Even if beef jerky has protein and whatever else, there are so many preservatives. I would just stick with whey. I eat a low sodium low fat trail mix from Costco. It's low in fat and tastes pretty good. It's got dried pineapples and other exotic fruit in it!

Sodium causes the body to retain water. This thins out your blood, which isn't bad per se, but it can wreak havoc on your blood pressure if you're really bad about it. tl;dr if you have health problems then you should control sodium intake.

SIDE NOTE! Sodium is vital to a ton of biological functions, one of the more important ones being the firing of synapses. Since sodium makes you retain water, some body builders will completely cut it out of their diet in order to look cut. You can imagine the lulz that ensue from that.

I'm not sure what kind of jerky you're eating. The whole point of jerking food is to preserve it, and it's delicious.

So final verdict: Jerky is good for bulking, y/n?
>> Anonymous
Beef Jerky is a good protein source, but imo it's not good for bulking. You see, it has got almost 0 calories, and if you want to pack muscles, you need to eat more than you metabolize. Sure, it's a nice healthy snack, but I would say it's better for cutting if anything...

Gotcha, thanks for the info.

Either:
1. Make your own jerky, and use less salt.
2. Jack Link's sells a Teriaky Beef Steak with about half the amount of sodium most jerky has.

Beef jerky is always going to have a lot of salt. That's how it is preserved.

Well, you can make it without using any salt..

It's preserved by drying/dehydrating, not curing. The salt helps, but it's not the main method of preservation.

The salt maintains that dryness.
If you put some unsalted dried beef out in the open, it would absorb moisture and rot.

unless they made some sort of room that they somehow managed to keep very dry all the time, but that would require some sort of factory possibly where they make beef jerky...

Eat Jack Links if you're going to eat jerkey and not make it yourself.

Normal plain JL is the best things going as far as mainstream and storebought.

Good snack with delish protein. Better than cramming cookies or some shit into your headhole.

Bridgford jerky is 10x better then jack links.

again, the salt helps, but it's not necessary. manufactured jerky comes with desiccant. home-made jerky has a shelf-life, and storage demands. it's "preserved" because it lasts a hell of a lot longer than it otherwise would, and it's not technically cooked.
