hello /fit/, I have decided to join a gym in order to get in shape. The problem is that I have never been to a gym and i'm not really sure where to start. I am 5'9 200 lbs. I remember that the max weight that I could bench was 135 lbs. but that was like 4 years ago. Ever since then, I havent really been working out except occasionally using some dumbells I have at home and trying to do pullups.(im up to 2)

Im hoping you guys could help me out with some questions i have.

1. What types of exercises/equipment should I be doing/using at the gym for my upper body?

2. What weight should I start at for those exercises?

any advice would be appreciated.

Pullup, dip, press, bent-over-row. That's a good core of exercises for the upper body. Then add some assistance work if you like. I do highly suggest squats (with variations) and deadlifts though, as they're generally anabolic, and might help you in that you won't be laughed at for being "that guy" who goes to the gym every other day to do bench press and bicep curls only.

don't they give you a complimentary session with a personal trainer?

find some really jacked dude at the gym and ask him for advice. believe it or not, these dudes live for moments like that, its like you're validating their whole life.

honestly, most gym rats are very nice and helpful people

i suggest using machines to start.

You should really find a workout partner. Then both of you see a trainer or whoever to teach you how to use freeweights/gym etiquette.
