Stretch marks are a part of life and the vast majority of people will get them somewhere if they haven't gotten them already. Even if your friends don't have any now, if they ever get pregnant, they probably will get them then.
Stretchmarks happen when your skin can't keep up with a growing body. The skin essentially tears at the deepest levels and the rifts fill with blood, which is why they're red or purple colored when new. Eventually, scar tissue will form in the cracks and the marks will fade to a silvery-white color.
Once you have gotten stretch marks, they will never go away. There's nothing you can do to get rid of them, only wait until they fade in color.
You can try and prevent stretchmarks by making sure you don't gain weight or muscle too quickly. Some say that losing weight too fast can cause stretch marks as well, but I've never PERSONALLY seen that happen. But my anecdotal "evidence" shouldn't be considered fact, obviously.
