Ok /fit/, I need some help. I'm 5'7", 275 lbs, 18 y.o. I've tried many times to lose weight, and every time it falls through. I know -how- to lose weight, but I don't know how to do it and stick to it. It always feels like I'm getting nowhere.

Is there anyone here who has lost a significant amount of weight? Like, around 75-100 lbs? How long did it take you, and what did you do to stick to it? How did you make it so you -wanted- to stick to it?

I'm also in a hard situation financially. I still live at home, and a few months ago I got a job working for a magazine that turned out to be a complete scam, and they owe me 1200 bucks now, that whole lawsuit is going right now. Since then, I haven't been able to get a job anywhere, and my dad is in a lawsuit trying to get disability (he actually deserves it, believe it or not). So right now we are living on like 200 bucks of food stamps a month.

What kind of food can we get that isn't chock full of sodium and calories? My dad is, for lack of a better term, a fatass as well, and he is perfectly fine being that way, so almost all he gets is frozen pizza and hot dogs. So that's almost all I can eat, because he says its all we can afford. And I'm honestly trying to get a job, so please don't say "get a job and buy your own food".

When I do run, I really enjoy it, but getting myself to start running is a pain in the ass. Plus, I've been told countless times to get a recumbent bike and just ride it, but obviously I can't afford that. So should I still run even though its supposedly bad for my legs?

Sorry for the huge post, but I'd really like to lose weight, it just feels like it doesn't happen, so I'm trying to get some kind of support.

Oh, and one last thing, which I hope doesn't make me look like a complete dumbass. I know someone who teaches a karate class. Is that honestly good exercise or should I not bother until I actually weigh less?

Karate? Go for it. Many people may disagree with me but anything that gets you out of the house and standing up is good. They will also typically encourage you to exercise, movement makes you happy and feel better about yourself. Also keep running, you'll be better off for it. Can't you get a cheap bike for $20 in America?

Ask your dad if you two can split the food stamps, can you do that? If he won't offer to take only $80, that should be enough. Buy a 25KG sack of rice, bags of dried beans, learn to prepare them, its not like you don't have time... When I went to america everyone ate huge portions, try having small portions or bulking up with cheap carrots and veg. Buy large bags of oats, and lentils, google a recipie. Don't eat too much meat, concentrate on chicken and tuna. If you have some land get some chickens for plentiful eggs.

One of the best things you can do is find a manual labourer job to tie you over for a while.

If I were you I would try swimming instead of running.

you are in a shitty situation, but not an impossible one, I'd try getting your father to split the foodstamps as well, if that works you should be on the right track. As for exercise, hmm, if your city/place is not extremly weird there should be tons of old used bikes for sale, nothing wrong with a bike that actually moves for exercise, check the papers, check yard sales etc. you don''t need anything complicated just something with two wheels and pedals(and maybe breaks, but don't get to picky) here you can basically get bikes for free if you are willing to pic it up.
I'd say go for the karate class if you can, hell any movement is better than no movement, that goes for your daily life as well, when looking for jobs, walk instead of taking the buss, take the stairs instead of elevators, if you are really trying hard to get a job this should let you burn a good bit of calories in a day.

best of luck

Alright, I'll look through Craigslist and such for a bike, I don't have a pool that is available, the nearest would be the YMCA but that is like 10 or so miles away, and no money = no gas lol.

25Kg bag of rice, any style in particular?

And thanks a lot for the help, guys.

Short grain for asian cooking, long grain for western. I recommend long grain since its usually cheaper. Head over to /ck/ and ask for cheap rice based recipes. Can't go wrong with rice and bean soup.

You must count your calories, and consume foods that your body needs. Your body does not need a avalanche of carbs smashing through your cakehole at all hours of the day. Cut down on sweets, oils, and unnecessary white starches. Huge helpings of pasta, rice, and white-bread sandwiches are out.

Eat whole wheat bread and pasta, oatmeal, fresh fruits and vegetables, lowfat/fat free dairies, and lean meats such as chicken/turkey breast, fish, etc. One classic staple is the garden vegetable/chicken breast salad. Satisfying, healthy (garden greens are extremely nutritious), and cheap.

You should aim to eat five or six smaller meals a day. This keeps the body in a state of constant metabolism. It takes energy to digest food. Eating three big squares a day lets your body settle into a routine, digesting one big lump and then remaining dormant for hours until the next meal.

Also, Never eat or drink anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup again. Ever again. Every time you drink a soda (HFCS), you create an insulin spike in the body. Long story short, this leads to the creation and retention of BODY FAT. So yeah, quit doing that.
