Yesterday I did a short HIIT-style workout which consisted of a 40 yard sprint, light jog back to starting line, 1:30-2 minutes of rest for 10 total cycles. Not terribly intense, but a damn good workout to ease back into intensity training. I'm hoping to get into Tabata-style training once my knees feel a little better (bursitis sucks.) and once I can re-gain my old soccer endurance.

What sort of HIIT/intensity training does /fit/ do?

Straight-up Tabata sprints on the track and sometimes on an ellipical.

Sonuvabitch, that's a smart idea. I should use ellipticals to save my knees.

How do you do your Tabatas? I was thinking 20 sec. sprint/10 sec rest?

If your ratio of activity to rest is (assuming you run about a 5-6 second 40) 5:90 or about 1:18, you're not really doing HIIT, you're just running sprints.
That's not to say that isn't a work-out, it's just going to produce different results.

Also, if you have bad knees, find something that doesn't put stress on your knees. Rowing, swimming, jumping rope on a soft surface, etc.
Sprinting is probably the worst thing you can do if you have bad knees, it's super high impact.

I personally use the methods I outlined above. If I'm feeling really frisky, I'll do a 4 minute Tabata set with a sledgehammer.

Yep, that's exactly what Tabata's are. Tabata's are HIIT, but not all HIIT workouts are Tabata.

Yeah, I'll be honest, cardio is NOT my forte nowadays.
My 40's have gone down from 4.7-4.9 hand timed in high school to a 5.1-5.9 the other day. Sad day.

Saw the workout in M&F as a intensity exercise, but it seemed a lot easier than the others. I'll probably go 20 sec/10 sec tomorrow. My body hasn't done change-of-pace running in 3 years :(

Thanks for the advice on the knees, though!
