So what are some good martial arts to get into? My college offers some classes and I was thinking of trying one to see if I like it.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu or traditional ju-jutsu (not as good) are both great.

Karate and Muay Thai are good too, boxing isn't bad either (although by some not considered a martial art per se).

Muay Thai and boxing are more physically demanding for them to be worth to practice, you should also train what compliments your body type if you're into the competative element of these sports.

These sports are also highly applicable (although Ju-jutsu pherhaps less so) in real fights and are commonly found in the arsenal of many UFC fighters.

For fitness? Any kind of kickboxing.

For self-defence? Start with boxing.

For discipline? Well, that's up to you.
>> Anonymous
Depends on what you want to get out of your martial arts. If you just want a good workout go with whatever is cheap and readily accessible. Try out a few classes and see what you like. The better you like a system/instructor, the more motivated you'll be to stick with it. Start with your basic Karate, TaeKwonDo, Judo, etc. As you learn more about what you like, look for something closer to that

>>309663

Good advice, but I have to disagree about training what compliments your body type.

Most of the martial arts you mentioned suit most body types provided they're reasonably fit. Fighters come in all shapes and sizes.
>> Anonymous
Most colleges offer Judo, which is an indisputably awesome art.

Judo is gay bullshit. Many of the throws and moves are not applicable unless your opponent is a beginner or if you have got a considerable physical advantage, the rules are gay and the sport itself aswell to its very core.

If you wanna hump other guys, then do it in the showers and not on the mat please.

Wrestling is the only fighting sport that's more gay (for obvious reasons) and with even more befuddling rules.. but at least that shit can be used to hold down someone.

>ju-jutsu (not as good)
>Ju-jutsu pherhaps less so

Stop talking about things you don't understand. The budo arts will teach you the highest quality techniques for fighting but it learning them is much much harder and takes a longer time (it should be obvious that the better you are the harder it is to improve). However, as long as you continue you will improve, and I really mean that if you never stop training you will never stop improving. This is not so for for easier to learn fighting methods that rely greatly on the growth of your muscular strength for improvement, because it is much faster to grow muscle than to learn control. Of course, if getting a life-long activity in which you can improve without end is not for you, but instead you actually do want to greatly improve your fitness then do kickboxing or boxing. Boxing will actually teach you very high-level punching since it has been developed scientifically for the last century.

Jiu-jitsu is basically just ju-jutsu but without the bullshit. It focuses on the grappling and takedowns, effective ones that actually work. It's also usually more physically demanding because you tend to do more work on the mat than standing.

>>309683
Jiu-jitsu is actually a good example. If you're a skinnyfag then jiu-jitsu is definitively not a sport where you'll be at an advantage. Generally you'll want to keep your distance and use ranged attacks for as long as possible.

Muay Thai is a good option for skinny fags, Karate is possibly good for any body type. I lack experience enough to say since I've never sparred against a good Karate user.

For purposes of self defence, Muay Thai or Boxing versus several opponents and jiu-jitsu versus a single one.

Although I train in BJJ, I can tell you that judo can be devastating. Some of the guys at my school have had experience, and they are very good at standup BJJ. It's not just about strength; successful takedowns require balance disruption and proper positioning to be truly effective.
>> Anonymous
Muay Thai for stand up. BJJ for floor work.

Muay thai is arguably the best stand up martial art in the world for fitness and effectiveness. You will learn how to fight in more ranges than boxing. You will learn how to use your body to maximum power that you wont in tkd/karate/kickboxing/bullshitholywood'art'.

You will do a lot of boxing given the increased western influence in the sport as of late, as well as how to use your elbows, knees and shins. Watch andre silva to see how well a 'real' mt fighter stands up in mma.

There is a reason why most/all mma fighters pretend to be mt stand up fighters and why most/all k1 fighters have a muay thai background or fight in a muay thai style regardless of what art they are claiming to fight from, shooto for example.

Jiu Jutsu is devastating, and very effective.
Also Tae Kwan Do is good for fitness but like any martial art that has kicks past waist line they're easy to break in ground work, not to say the kicks dont hurt like fuck.
Similarly for Muay Thai, except for some reason I could never grab the Muay Thai fighters legs as well as a Tae Kwan Do guy, so definately go for them.

Another one I recommend like hell is Wing Chun, which is absolutely vicious in real life fights, but has pretty lackluster mat work.

Uechi Ryu Karate. We pound on each others limbs ritually. Hard strikes, soft blocks, very mean pointed strikes using a properly supported single knuckle punch and a pointed toe kick, open handed strikes and strong but not deep fighting stance. We work on the relaxation and sudden tensioning of the proper muscles to get the fastest hard strike we can. Uechi Ryu is probably the most survival oriented karate style.

>> Anonymous
>>311643

pretty sure mano-e-mano a muay thai fighter could easily take a judo practitioner or wrestler, as soon as that head goes down for a grab or the hands go out, elbows would fly and it would be lights out. or fuck, even before that, teeps and all sorts of shin nastery would stop them. Theyd have to scramble for a take down, which is where they would be wishing they'd gone to bjj class.

If your goal is to survive, don't do martial arts. Do 100 & 200 meter dash.

If your goal is to get hurt in the goal of some street-peen glory, then for starters get reasonably fit, a set of balls and hit hard in the face (nose is a failproof spot), throat or solar plexus. Don't stop hitting until your opponent is down and then make sure that he doesn't get back up.

Don't make a half-arsed attempt at a punch and then just stand there dazed, shivering with adrenaline. You'll get beat to a pulp that way. Oh, and don't ever wrestle with someone bigger than yourself.

Once you have the above, you'll be 1000% better. THEN you may consider martial arts for this sake, however stupid it may be. What's the use of a weapon if you can't wield it?

OH btw, look at some gore pictures of people who've been beat up badly. You should know what you're getting yourself into.

who said anything about killing them? You brandish a gun or knife to anyone and they are gonna back off.

Plus if you KO someone with a knee or choke them out or break their arm with a submission you are in the same boat as a person shooting or stabbing. you just inflicted bodily harm on someone in the name of self defense

assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to maim or kill(prison) vs broken arm, bruised face(county jail)
>> Anonymous
>>311731

not true. the law in the uk at least, and considering the us's common law is based on uk law, id assume its the same:

reasonable force in self defence is force by which your opponent is using or is intending to use on you. if you can show >you thought< (hell, just saying you thought it works give then laws subjectivity) your opponent was going to seriously injury you without a weapon (i.e. using their body) you can ensure they are stopped with your own.

using a weapon against an unarmed assailant is obviously unreasonable.

so you are saying i am walking in the middle of now where and get ambushed and jump, beaten to a bloody pulp and i finally draw out my gun and graze the guy's arm or leg, ill go to jail? or same situation but i finally draw a knife and stab him in the side or arm? BS they had the intent of killing me, i have the write to bear arms and defend my life
>> Anonymous
>>311745
obviously that depends on how long you hold the choke.

in the legal term of self-defense you would be in the clear in close range assault no matter where you shoot them. but you would have to make a really good case for yourself if they are unarmed.
>> Anonymous
>>311753

Id hazard a guess that yes, if they had the intent to KILL you, then you could kill them to protect your life out of necessity (although this is very very tricky in common law, with necessity you have to prove that your life was in immediate threat).

If given your situation, they had indeed beaten you up, and THEN you had attempted to kill them, you would be as culpable as them as it wouldnt really be in self defence if they are walking away.

The difference in fighting objects does make your situation even trickier. But I was talking about a street fight before, not an attempted murder, most street fights dont come with the intent of death generally.

what i dont get is you could train your ass off and become a cage fighter bad ass. And yeah you would break the law if you used a weapon. But it still doesnt prevent the other guy being armed and robbing/beating you blind. If you wanted a fool proof way of defending yourself you need to invest in mace or a tazer

Um no. In some case mace makes people fall to the ground clutching their face screaming in pain. In some cases it makes people go fucking berserk in your direction, screaming in pain. Some people can resist and that's not even considering the possibility of missing, instrument failure, or wind.

Evidence has shown that if you get tazed, you ARE going down, however, there is a video (nat geo or discovery channel, I think) of a man who was able to rip the tazer's dart out his chest while being shocked. He still hit the ground like a plank, but got up again in less time than it would take for you to say "WTF he's still coming at me!!"

So..... mace is good, tazers are great. neither is 100% and in the event of a malfunction, etc. one would want to be able to end or control a hostile situation using nothing more than their bare hands (or feet, elbows, knees, etc.)

Holy shit, why is every MA-related thread on /fit/ full of idiots?

It depends on what you're looking to get out of your training and, as always, the quality of the instruction.

If you want practical self-defence, take Judo. I don't know if you've ever been thrown by a good Judoka (or, hell, ANY judoka,) but it fucking hurts, and if it's done on any kind of hard surface then it's probably going to break something and fuck the other guy up in general, not to mention that if it's a GOOD Judo gym you'll probably get some solid grappling instruction as well.

For fitness I'd go with wrestling. It may not look it, but that 6-minute wrestling match is more tiring than playing a full game of just about any other sport. As such, they do a metric fuckton of conditioning - and it works.

For general badassery I'd go with Muay Thai or Taekwondo. Muay Thai is just generally a good striking art, and unless the instructor is complete and utter shit you'll become a pretty solid striker in no time flat. Taekwondo, on the other hand, probably not so much. There's quite a bit of pomp and fluff in modern TKD, but if you get a really good instructor that focuses on actually teaching you to fight rather than just doing fucking kata all day then it could work out. Essentially, Muay Thai to learn how to fight, TKD to learn lots of flashy, cool looking (but impractical) kicks.

Outside of that, it's up to you. If you're taking it for fun then just look around and do whatever interests you. Oh, and I'm a martial arts instructor and former professional fighter, if that makes my input any more credible.

Actually, most mixed-martial-artists aren't that 'shredded'. At least, not as much as your generic bodybuilder. They only look that way for a day or so before and after their fight, from cutting weight. When they're at their walking-around weight they're usually not that defined at all.
