Dear /fit/,
Unlike the rest of you fantastically healthy people, I going to be totally honest and say that I am a most definitely unfit nerd hailing from /cgl/. I used to be pretty fat, but I've been watching my diet and been getting a bit of exercise into my life but I need a little bit more.
Right now, I'm about fifteen to twenty pounds over what's considered a healthy weight for my height, and I'd like to change that. I have three months, and while I of course don't expect to be someone with a rock-hard chiseled figure, I'd like to look at least halfway close to the very typical fit sort of anime hero for a costume.

I'm 5'7 and about 165 pounds. The only thing I've been doing is some running and cutting down my calories to ~1700 per day. I'm quite illiterate on techniques to get fit and I'd be very, very grateful of any advice you could give me on what else I should be doing. Due to a possible apartment move, I'm also not very sure if there is going to be a gym available to me, so I'd appreciate your giving me advice on things to do both with or without a gym membership.
Thanks in advance!

I have the rippetoe book downloaded and was going to start following it after I lost some weight. My curiosity begs the question and I don't know, it just seems counter productive to me to eat and lift weights when I thought trimming down involved eating less and doing cardio stuff like running?

indeed. Two phases in bb: bulking where you eat and train like mad, cutting where you reduce carbs and calories to cut body fat.
But, with your body, I'd just start hitting the weights and eat properly.
You'll gain muscle fast while still being a bit flabby.

What was the scar from?

Pretty easily. If anything i find it difficult to eat over 1400 calories a day, after a while your stomach adjusts to the proper intake of food and you just dont feel the need to eat like a truck. Of course when i start bulking i'll enjoy chowing down on decent foods again.

remove almost all carbs from your diet, and do bout 25 min of cardio 5 days a week, drop your calorie intake to a 1000 below what u use (internet to find how much u use) and eat alot of protein! u should drop bout 2 pounds of pure fat a week.

Sorry for sounding like a broken record, but why do you suggest that? I understand there's a bulk-and-cut cycle in body building, but for aesthetic reasons, I really want to get rid of my belly fat first. Can you tell me whats wrong with going with a cut-then-bulk routine instead?

Getting an appendix taken out.

I suggested bulking, because you are not THAT fat. Sure you could lose some, but if you only got three months to build muscle, you might want to start now, cause that'll take longer than cutting.

Dont drop ALL carbs or you will go into ketosis. Limit it to around 70g carbs a day.

I understand. Is there a way to gain the muscle while losing the flab? Like, if I weightlift as described in the book while eating less than recommended, will I be able to gain the build while losing the flab?

just do it, the more mussle you have the faster you burn calories. The more you work out, the more calories you burn.

1lb muscle was estimated to only burn 11 calories a day after several studies. Sure its a benefit, but he can still do HIIT alongside lifting.

you need to eat what's recommended to gain decent muscle mass.

just SQUAT, you might lose a bit of belly fat anyway.

Do more bicep CURLZ

Possibly since you're a beginner. Otherwise it helps you to retain muscle mass but you won't really gain.

There's a limit to how much calories you can extract from fat tissue. For a normal male it's little over 1000kcal per day (dunno about OP precisely though, crazy American measurements are impossible to calculate) so even if he gains muscle fast, he won't be able to burn the fat layer off any faster, it'll simply become easier since he can eat more and still maintain the ~1000kcal deficiency.

Muscle needs insulin to grow properly, but higher levels of insulin also make it harder to lose fat, so growing muscle and losing fat at the same time is pretty hard and not as effective as doing them separetely. I'd suggest first losing the fat to the level you desire, and then using whatever time you have left (if any) to bulk up.

OP, I hate to tell you this, but you can't lose fat in only one location of your body. Losing fat needs to happen over the entire body, so your best bet is to build more muscle.

fat is burned generally from all stores available and which areas are resistant to loss are determined by genetics.

This should help A LOT OP, trust in it's wisdom.

cardio wont reduce bodyfat until your muscle has been wasted way to bare minimum.

actually, on the way to minimum muscle, your BF % will actually INCREASE, but you will lose pounds.

i dont see why this is a good idea.

a solid weightlifting regimen supplemented by HIIT would be ideal for reducing your bodyfat, but keeping muscle.

I use The Daily Plate, but the problem that bothers me is that much of the food I eat can't be found in the search engine for foods. Does fitday have that same search system or is it better?

Thedailyplate is a lot better than a lot of other websites when it comes to their food database. At least in my opinion it is.
