Hello, /fit/. Let me get right to the point. I want to join the Air Force. The thing is, I'm 5'11" and 228 pounds. Overweight, by any ones' standards. Anyways, I was wondering how would I become in shape enough to achieve my goal? Tips, what kind of exercise routine to start off with, monthly goals I should go for, a weight to shoot for, etc. would be really helpful. I've never went on a diet before in my life...so I come to you. Please, /fit, you are my only hope! (Star Wars reference, I know...)

Pic is of me a couple months ago. I'm 20 btw.

Holy God. You look like you're thirty. O.o;;

Um... getting past that, you should google some stuff. Get to know how to read nutrition labels and what to look for and what and what not to eat as part of a healthy diet. Next, you need to start off slowly with your exercise. It will be a bitch at first, but once you get into it, it's actually quite a bit of fun. I suggest biking at first, or if you can't ride a bike, just go for walks. Remember: the key is to start off slow, then work your way up to a jog. Get some free weights or join a gym, and ask for some assisstance there on what to do about if you wnat to join the armed forces and what they look for.

Sound good? Okay, hop to it, Skippy! Ten four, over and out!

1) Start eating healthy. Find out how much calories you should intake, cut it by 500. Protein is your friend, but try to get some complex carbs and healthy fats in there as well. Also, green vegetables, and fruit (in moderation, especially fruits like bananas). It's best if you can spread your total daily caloric intake through 5/6 meals. Your metabolism will always be working for you.
2) Do cardio for at least 30minutes a day. If you have access to a gym hit the treadmill, elliptical, or bike machine.
3) Do some weight lifting on the days you don't do cardio. Shoot for around 12-15 reps at a lower weight. If you feel like you can do some cardio on the days you do the lifting, go for it, just don't overtrain, take it light.

Call the recruiters office or go in, they'll be able to help you get down to the weight you need to be.

I just got out of the AF, and I can give you some encouragement. You'll fit right in with the with the anime-loving, WoW playing, "I'm 25 and a virgin" fags that make up this branch of service. I can personally recommend the 3C0X2 and 3C0X1 career fields.

Clean up your diet. Very slowly, get your body used to running. You'll be prone to overuse injuries until you drop some weight. Cardio, cardio, etc. If you aren't sweating and breathing heavily, you aren't working hard enough.

Yeah, 3C0X2 is actually what I'm joining for. Thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated.

lol, I knew it. FYI, the X1 and X2 career fields are merging to create a "cyber warfare" 3D career field. The recruiter may or may not know/tell about it, since it won't happen for another year or so. You'll have a job in IT, but there's no guarantee that it'll be programming.

Basic isn't too demanding. If you can get your BMI below 25, run 1.5 miles in a reasonable amount of time, and do a few situps & pushups, you'll be fine.
