I'm slightly confused by my HIIT experience. I can run farther and longer when I do HIIT as opposed to steady paced cardio.

Am I doing it wrong?

Yes.

Which one... the HIIT or the steady paced? I'm definitely working harder when I do HIIT and push myself until failure with sprinting. I'm starting to think my rest periods are too long; I started not too long ago so I'm still perfecting my technique.

How long is your rest period & sprint period?
What kind of speed do you keep at on your rest period?
what are you using for doing HIIT?

Rest period is about a minute long at the moment -- I walk, then sprint for 30 seconds (it usually dwindles down to ~20 seconds near the end)

I started doing a walk/jog/sprint today half way through just to see how that was. I kind of liked it more. Walked for about 45 seconds to a minute, jogged for 15-30, then sprint for 30, repeat.

Rest period, I walk a moderate pace I guess. But again, today I started doing a walk/jog/sprint.

Running. I have the option of doing it on a bike, but I just enjoy running more. Although, I've done it a few times on a bike and it felt a heck of a lot harder.

I'm no expert on HIIT but what I've been doing until exhaustion and then some has been Sprint/Jog/Sprint/Jog/Sprint/Jog with 30 second sprints and about 30s-1minute jogging in between depending on how fucked I am.. I wouldn't suggest walking in between time..

WHO THE FUCK TOLD YOU COULD WALK? WALKING IS FOR FAT PEOPLE

This is just my opinion, but maybe your steady pace cardio sucks because you don't have endurance. I keep hearing that HIIT is implemented to build stamina, but to me, it seems more oriented toward explosivity rather than prolonged activity.

Because I'm new to HIIT. I don't plan on keeping the walking for very long.

Yeah, probably.

how many miles you do this for?

It doesn't really matter if you walk instead of jog, just as long as the sprinting interval is *max effort* and your heart rate doesn't slow down too much.

How effective is HIIT against say, using an exercise bike at a steady pace for an hour? Am I likely to lose more weight?
