It's a bad state of mind to think that losing weight will VASTLY change your personality or fix any mental problems.
You probably got fucked with a lot when you were really fat. People can't do that now really, but the damage from the past is still there. It's just typical mental conditioning from the abuse dickheads used to give you. I suggest seeking a therapist for a few months of sessions to sort these feelings out.
While going to therapy, focus on doing things that YOU enjoy which give YOU a feeling of great accomplishment. Sports MIGHT be it, but it's hardly fact that doing competitive physical sports is going to make everyone feel better. I really shine on the debate team at my college and it's what I enjoy doing. When I do good on a debate, I feel on top of the world in all aspects. I also get the same feeling by keeping up with my studies (if I study hard and 100% an exam, I'm on a natural high all day...if I go into the exam unprepared I feel shitty WHILE taking it and feel shitty for the next day or two as well).
Heck, for some people it might be as simple as collecting stamps. Do whatever it is that gives you a feeling of great achievement, that is what is going to make you ultimately feel successful and happy. Success, by definition, is a measure of one's happiness.
