Dear /fit/. I went to a Care Now clinic (one of those places you can go if you need to see a doctor more immediately than setting up an appointment with a normal doctors office) because my left ear ached. The doctor there told me i have a perforated ear drum and prescribed me "neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and hydrocortisone otice suspension USP" in ear drop form. When i picke dup this prescription and i read the information on the little pamphlet inside the box, it specifically stated it was not to be used on patients with a perforated tempanic membrane. Who should i trust? the doctor or the pamphlet?

the doctor, a lot of drugs can be used a variety of ailments other than those they were designed for. For example doctors often prescribe a certain type anti-depresents to treat migraine.

Google the drugs or active ingredients, or ask your pharmacist for a second opinion, they no a lot about the drugs they sell usually more so than the doctors and will have books on the premisses i imagine which would be your equivalent of the BNF

http://www.bnf.org/bnf/

Guidlines on the use and prescription of all drugs.

theres a difference between when a doctor gives you something that is designed for a different purpose and a doctor giving you something that explicitly states to not use it in your situation

second opinion / look it up

Like i told you already there's not a lot more you can do unless you wanna risk it. If you use it and the doctor has fucked up you'll be quids in when you go deaf
