they're fucking hard on a bar...id advise you to get some rings to learn them.

but basically on a bar you need to kip like a motherfucker.

Kipping hard helps. i'd say try to improve how fast you come up on your pullups so you can get the momentum.

oh ok. i was wondering why its sooo much easier to do them while kipping. i thought that was just to add numbers to my gympenis but now i know it works the muscles just as much.

kipping is not cheating but it will not help you do a strict muscle up. it is the same principal as working up to 1000 pushups and then thinking you can bench 3x your BW. If you don't want to do weight AND if you can't do 20 raw pullups, try to pull up and get as much of your body above the height of the bar on EVERY rep. Stick to sets of 2-5 reps and go as slow as fuck. If it's too easy, do it in L-sit fashion. And yes, get rings.

muslce-ups are crazy

one day i tried to do one, after about 10 attempts i finally got them. did about 5 and figured i got it. 2 days later i couldn't even come close. 4 days later i tried again for a while and finally got one and couldn't get another one.

i believe it's all about shoulder flexibility, most people have the strength but don't have the shoulder flexibility. that or they aren't doing the false grip, or they aren't doing the right technique.

I saw someone doing kipping pull ups at the gym a few weeks back before I knew what they were, I though it looked completely ridiculous and the guy was just failing at pull ups. Turns out swinging and furiously humping the air to make it seem like you can do pull ups is a real exercise. That shit is bananas.

Shoulder flexibility doesn't have shit to do with it. The problem is that the average American can't come fucking close to doing 5 honest deadhang pull-ups or dips.

Kipping turns pull-ups into a cardiovascular stress, rather than a strength stress (like weighted pull-ups would be). Doing deadhang pull-ups for high reps is retarded, since there's no use for high levels of lat and bicep specific endurance; it'll just hurt your strength in the weighted variation.

And the second argument...

Jump, as hard as you can. Why did you swing your arms? Then why not swing your legs when you pull-up as hard as you can?

i know people who can do over 50 pull-ups (on the crossfit forums) but cannot do a muscle up due to scapula inflexibility in their shoulders. it's all about the transition from pull-up to dip in a muscle-up, and if you've never done a muscle-up before then go eat a dick, because nobody in the world has done one on their first try
