In all seriousness, can playing DDR count as cardio?
>> JohnD !A.I6YFjyO2
as long as you don't do songs that leave you gasping for air, yes.

Really? I thought doing those songs over and over again would build some kind of positive endurance.

sorta...

Breathing a bit hard isn't the same as gasping for air... I'm going to use a couple songs from DDR extreme (arcade version) as examples for my case. All are in heavy mode, with perhaps a couple in standard. forgive me, it's been a while since I've played.

songs like Can't stop falling in love (speedy mix), Burning heat, the max songs, cartoon heros... those are bad until you actually get your endurance up that high... my theory behind it is your body goes from burning fat or whatever to just trying to get enough air to sustain consciousness...

songs like Paranoia KCET (clean mix), Tsugaru apple mix, crash (in b4 fagsong), I'm a cowgirl (STILL IN B4FAGSONGS), dropout, Sakura challenge mode. Those build up certain parts of the endurance to make a greater whole. They get you breathing hard, but not to the point where you just want to collapse on the ground to get your breath back.

another sort of way I'd look at it is a parallel to weight lifting. Sure, you can try to lift the heaviest thing there is there, and you may be able to a bit. But you effectively destroy any benefit, because you can only do it once, and you risk injury. I don't know how good of a comparison it is, but it's something to think about...

Hey, thanks for that. I see what you're talking about, that you should build up to the harder levels instead of jumping straight to them.

I just heard the cardio-worthiness of DDR questioned because it only works out a 'certain part of the body' or something, even though I know that cardio is just getting your heart rate up while staying in motion.

Glad to hear it makes sense to you...

Don't get me wrong, I'm no expert, and I may just be talking out of my ass... But I do believe I'm decently accurate. Make sure you don't just jump right into your tough songs either. warm up with a set or two of lower songs to get your body working in the right zone...

A cardio warmup should give you a light sweat. And warm down too... otherwise you'll be rediculously sore.

What you're describing is anaerobic exercise. Doing it builds your anaerobic endurance for things like sprinting.

Contrast with aerobic exercise, which is were you wear tights and build your aerobic capacity.

It's true, it's true, anon has got it dead to rights/it cannot be aerobic exercise unless you're wearing tights

I think I've been here too long. I saw that tank and thought "Now how the fuck is she going to pull that off?"

Now, now, that's more /d/ or perhaps /hc/ material.

DDR does count as cardio, but don't make it your only cardio. Also, don't play it for more then an hour.
>> Anonymous
DDR should be used as a supplement to your cardio program, not the main exercise. One thing I can say though, all that jumping around and maintaining your balance will build core strength

I played DDR for several months (3-4) and lost 20 lbs. I was always hungry, felt more alert and stronger too. I also had to keep water handy and drink some after several songs. I lost weight from All over my body. I highly recommend not playing the songs that make you want to stop and fall over until you have the stamina to keep up.

where else would you lose weight from?

:O I meant that it wasn't just my lower body that showed significant signs or weight loss.

>>my theory behind it is your body goes from burning fat or whatever to just trying to get enough air to sustain consciousness...

instead of posting your theories, perhaps you should stick to medical facts.

interval training(ie busting your ass for a short period of time, then resting, then busting your ass again etc...) is THE best way to increase cardio, and most effective way to burn calories. if you are left litteraly gasping for air, check your heart rate, youve probably hit your VO2 max (max amount of oxygen your circ. system can carry) 220 - your age = MAX heartrate for example, a 20 year old would not go over 200 bpm. its damn near impossible to go over your VO2 max without first having some other medical condition. (because your circ system cant support anymore activity so you tire, work less, and heart rate drops.)

and... as for the last part of the quoted text... thats just a retarded theory.

unless you had lypo, that shouldnt happen anyways.

spot reduction is about as real pixies.
