Cut fat or Build muscle first? Anonymous
Chubby fucker here. Something's been bugging me the past few weeks. I'm wondering if it'd work out better to cut back on my diet now and try to burn through the fat, or if focusing on building muscle first would result in a faster difference.

Don`t cut back on how much you eat but change what you eat instead. That usually work a lot better. Try to get some exercise in. Don`t push yourself too hard because you want consistency with weight loss. Instead of working your butt off for a month, work yourself slowly for the rest of your life. You won`t see awesome results as fast but you won`t gain any of it back.

lol, 2000 calories of healthy foods will make him just as fat as 2000 calories of junk.

Cut then bulk, then you will be able monitor your diet by the mirror rather than the scale.

Dieting is not the way to go. Focusing on changing your diet long term will help. . . and yes, work out. Eat a heavy protein diet (1 gram protein per pound of your target weight), spread your meals out over 5-6 meals a day and LIFT.

Combine this with HIIT and you'll gain muscle, shred through fat, boost your metabolism and feel great.

One thing I'll say before excuses about the eating 6 times a day thing. You don't have to eat 6 separate meals. Eat a good breakfast (if you don't like eating breakfast, then force yourself to start) and then have a solid snack 2 hours later, you may not be hungry exactly but that's part of making this diet work. You eat before you're hungry and you eat smaller amounts so you avoid pigging out on huge meals due to excessive hunger. This could be some nuts, some fruit . . . hell, it could even be something "bad" for you . . . but make sure it's bad in a way that has some real nutrients. Some meat or something.

Next, buy your normal lunch about 2 hours after your snack. You should still not be all that hungry. Split your lunch into two servings and save the second half. The half should be enough to get you through to your next meal. A couple hours later, finish up your lunch. Finish off your night with a couple hardy "snacks". I like to have some meat at night, personally. I'll usually get a steak or some chicken. Eat half and then an hour or two later finish it off.

This diet will help you boost your metabolism and it will also keep you from getting hungry, which will help you to avoid making bad food decisions, like a giant bag of chips because you're starving and suddenly those chips look 10x better.

Still, the key is ALWAYS to exercise. All the "cutting" that's so popular here is silly, if you have a choice between lifting or cutting, lift. If you have a choice between cutting AND lifting (while eating a ton of protein) or straight cutting? Always cut and lift.

Guess I wasn't entirely clear in my OP.

I've actually improved my eating for the most part the past year(as much as a uni student can on a limited budget), been hitting the gym fairly consistantly the past year(less so during the summer), managed to drop about 20 from last summer. I guess I'm really wanting to just clear up a few things that get thrown around alot on these boards:

Alot of the posters claim that cutting fat while building muscle usually doesnt work as well. Is this 100% true or is it mainly just an issue once you reach a certain point?

Carb intake vs Protein intake for gains. I'm actually not a big eater in general, however last few days ive seen alot of discussion on here arguing whether protein intake or carb intake is a larger factor. What's the lowdown on this?

dropping BF while lifting/bulking is possible if you are new to lifting and do it clean but even then it isn't anything hugely noticeable

I'm kinda at the same spot as you OP, I dropped from 30% BF to 17% in the past 6 months and was pretty conflicted whether I should bulk or keep cutting. But after lifting for 2 months and not losing as much BF as I want (while gaining mussle and plenty of strength)

I realized I need to cut for another 3 or so months, but cut hard with lifting and HIIT

plus like everyone else said you will be able to track your gains via the mirror

yea, well, I still have a good deal of bodyfat to drop, plus w/some of the weight i put back over the summer. The big thing i was wondering though was, w/more muscle mass, I'd be moving more weight during my workouts and thus burning more.

This is 100% untrue. As long as you are getting enough protein and you aren't restricting too heavily on calories, cutting AND bulking is always better.

Cutting without exercise loses muscles, slows your metabolism and makes it harder to lose burn calories do to less active muscle and no muscle building.

This board constantly spews the cut then bulk method. I don't know why. It's wrong and it's dumb. It makes it HARDER to get to the muscle build you want and it makes it harder to lose fat. The only thing that pure cutting does is make you lose overall WEIGHT faster . . . but a good portion of that weight is muscle.

If you aren't losing body fat (and don't let a scale tell you how much fat you're losing) while you are lifting, you simply aren't lifting hard enough and you almost definitely aren't diversifying your work out enough.

If you are concerned about bulking up too much, then get more aggressive with your HIIT training.

Really, if you are lifting and doing HIIT and eating enough protein (if you don't get enough protein then ALL OF THIS IS FOR NAUGHT) you should not stop dropping fat until you are at a damn nice body weight.

Remember, the last pounds are ALWAYS the hardest.

other than protein dont you need a caloric surplus to build muscle mass?

I understand that eating clean with plenty of protein is your goal for cutting or bulking, but alot of people decide to cut then bulk just due to time or personal reasons

I mean huuueg fat fucks could just lift for 6-8 months and get hella stronger and drop some decent BF, but they wont drop as much BF as straight cutting, THEN lifting.

cosmetic reasons I guess? people decide they are gonna dedicate their self to fitness they have a goal, and if they have mantits and a gut they want it gone, and whats the best way to get rid of that time wise? lifting + Hiit(CUTTING)

cutting/bulking isnt the end of the world

cut till you are at 12-10%

abs and all. then clean bulk and you can monitor your progress from there on via mirror like the other ppl said

or if you do have some self control and have done this before, clean bulk now for awhile then cut though I wouldn't suggest this if you are coming down from being a fattyfat. shit i wouldnt recommended it to anyone unless theyve done it before

A bowl of salad has much less caleries then a hamburger by the same volume. And believe it or not, people measure how much they eat by volume not by caleries.
