Martial Arts thread.

What do you study and why?

(If we can avoid the whole "my martial art is based on world domination and thus is better than yours" thing, that would be awesome. Let's keep it civil, if possible)

Have only done some MMA training 2 years ago.. only trained like 6 months. It was great fun though, but i moved and haven´t found a new gym. Only weight training and the occasional cardio for me now. Would like to start again.

also brah you forgot to inb4 using a gun instead.

I started studying Krav Maga simply because it looked the most direct and violent. It's an entire style around urban combat and does not fuck around. One of the first things I learned was to how turn an attackers knife slash and put it in his own throat.

How are Krav Maga classes structured? Like technique vs. application? One-on-one vs. mass drills?
>> Anonymous
>>377718
Kind of a big mix. You start out learning basic strike methods, then move into grapples. From there it's situational. How to respond to a gun in your back, how stop a stabbing motion, etc... Then the instructors will pair up and work you through the motions in better details. I've been told that some schools offer a belt system, the one I'm with requires a situational response demonstration as you get better.

Example: You spend a few months training with knives. At the end of that training cycle, you square off against 4 students using (fake) knives. If you get lethally hit more than five times you fail.

This is a good introduction video.

I study Hising yi (xing yi etc...) krav maga and jkd.
I've also trained in tang lang (mantis kung fu) but it was 6 years ago and it sucks...

Xing yi becous i like the traditional taoistic training mixed with a style tha can really be used in combat situation...
Krav maga and Jkd to improve "street fighting" and, firts of all, for the fun of sparring xD

I'm looking into some jujitsu classes right now anyone got some tips on exercises to prepare for it?
>> Anonymous
>>377722

Thanks for the video, Anon.

I've been looking to start training a martial art for self defense purposes and a friend of mine recommended Krav Maga and/or Leung Ting Wing Tsun. Both I guess because they are concerned with realistic self defense and not sport or competition. I'm researching both and trying to figure out which path I want to pursue.

Is there much ground fighting in Krav Maga?

This is /fit/, not /ma/. Take it somewhere else.

i practice jujutsu beacuse its fun.

you fuckers, dont do a martial art because you want to protect yourself, kick some ass blah blah... you will never use it in real life. even an experienced martial artist uses only some punches, kicks for fights.

Some, but that's more for dealing with unarmed attackers, or a one on one situation. Just when you want to put someone down and hold them. Other wise when dealing with weapons or multiple attackers the focus is striking and quick recovery. You don't want to be dicking around with someone on the ground when his friend is behind you with a blade.

i'm not doing it for self defense either just need some exercise since being an IT major drastically reduced my activity levels

I agree and disagree, guys keep the martial art threads /fit/ related, otherwise please don't post here

Tae Kwon Do

Why? It's 10 bucks a semester at my school. You can't beat that price around here. The instructor has been teaching since the 60's, was a former marine, cross trained in judo and hap ki do.

Plus it's traditional style, not the fail tournament style that is mostly taught now.

Doing Krav Maga really got me into fitness. The best time in my life, for about 6 months, everyday I work up, did a two hour workout by myself, went to my shitty part time job, 2 hour Krav Maga classes, home. Greatest time of my life.

Then I went into the military.

Practicing a martial art is not related to health and fitness?
>> Anonymous
I study sambo and brazilian jiu jitsu intensively, but i occasionally practice muay thai and aikido

>>377758

Discussing which techniques are the most deadly for street fightingz or who is the best MMA fighter is not. Invariably, those are most of the threads that get posted here.

I study wado ryu karate and jujitsu because it is kick ass and my sensei is an old cage fighter!

Krav maga is good for self defens, very easy to learn e quite effective...but I agree with>>377741
>> Anonymous
>>377760

True. No question. OP did make an effort to avoid that kind of talk.

And I have to imagine that most people posting are not actually training for the purpose of fighting, but more the purpose of training. For health and fitness.
>> Anonymous
>>377771

Actually we train for both. Half the point of learning a martial art of sorts is not only for the fitness but the ability and confidence to protect yourself if you live in an area where muggings and violence is common place.
>> Anonymous
>>377773

i train for health and to compete. not really self defense, unless you view the whole competition part as a corollary of self defense.
>> Anonymous
>>377741

Someone who actually knows how to fight or defend themselves is probably less likely to get into that kind of a situation as well.
>> Anonymous
>>377778

it could be said that for some (not all, and i doubt the ones who post here) tend to be more aggressive and thus more likely to be in that kind of situation

The topic of MA's is very rage inducing and the threads quickly turn to trolldom. It takes away from the overall quality of the board, which is something that I'm upset about. /fit/ at times can be very good, or a troll hotspot. I prefer to keep it quality, and that's why I sage every MA thread.

>>377773
That was my reasoning. I knew I wanted to enter the Military but I was a fat sloth most of my life and had to lose like 150 pounds before I qualified for basic. I started working out alone, but got into Krav to give me that edge up and get me used to dealing with instructors. Loved it. Luckily there is a Krav school near my base, so I'm still active.
>> Anonymous
>>377780

Yeah, I think you're probably right. I guess you'd hope that martial arts instructors are a little more responsible and teach a little more respect and responsibility, but there's no accounting for assholes.

muay thai, combat submissions, and a little bit of mixed (just for the knifepartyfuntime). taught by an ex navy seal, which is pretty sweet. he doesn't fuck around or really do much ceremonial stuff at all. it's great.

I just study everything. Ever since I was 6 my parents would just have me do martial arts since it was cheap, kept me fit, and gave me something to do after school.
I did many of them until I was 18. I did karate, kickboxing, judo, BJJ, boxing, and there was even a kung fu place here. I stopped caring so much and moved on to gym memberships and whatnot.
I wouldn't say I'm a master at any, but I'm really good and can easily hold my own now.

What?
I study "freestyle karate" under a guy who spent a long time doing tae kwon do, who spends most of his time training (pro and amateur) kickboxers.
Lets call it kickboxing with a few chops and throws for good measure.
Why?
I can barely bring myself to run for two minutes, let alone any sort of usual exercise, but hot damn spending a minute punching, then a minute kicking, then a minute at pushups, then jump kicking, then some more punching, then some SQUATZ then some getting punched at, then some punching at stuff/people, I can go for two (or more) hours at a time. Whole body workout, FTW, variety is the spice of life, etc.
I'll leave out the psuedo-spiritual bullshit and kill-a-man-7-times-before-he-hits-the-ground-self-defense crap for the time being...
Is that sorta /fit/ related enough to save this thread?
>> Anonymous
>>377875

I think the mention of SQUATZ might just have given this thread a chance...

I train 5-6 hours a week in a striking martial art. I do 150-200 crunches a day, I do push ups and shock ups everyday, I run and do stairs every second day, I skip rope every second day, I do endurance training on a heavy bag or wall bag probably every second day. Don't do much weight training, but if I do it's with very low weight and loads of reps.

I'm not a fighter and would avoiding fighting at all costs. I sorta look at my training as trying to get into 'fighting shape'. But only for fun, and physical and mental health.
>> Anonymous
I train mma and fight as an amateur. I also fucking hate martial arts threads in /fit/.
>> Anonymous
Practice Aikido. I don't really care much about effectiveness and it has (my Aikido school) enough focus on that, as well as a pretty good effect in my life in general.

>>377715
Knife defense is oddly enough pretty like Aikido's knife defense (only that we generally don't actually hit the face).
>> Anonymous
>>377910
Pray tell, WTF is a shock up? (Google gives me irrelevance and dead links)

Your workout seems pretty thorough, but, have you tried anything like leg-lifts, leg-circles, leg-scissors, etc. (basically a crunch w/ the lower body instead, legs kept straight)? If you're that comfortable with crunches, these might challenge you a bit more.
>> Anonymous
if you're not doing any sparring you're just wasting your time.

even if you don't plan on ever getting into a fight. hitting a bag is all well and good but you need to get hit back. some light sparring would do you good.

think of it as completing your fitness circle.

A shock up (or what I call a shock up - maybe there's a reason that google comes up with nothing...) is a push up done on your knuckles with your arms next to your body and your elbows pointed down your body, and you lower yourself as low down as you can and then explode up launching your upper body and arms off the ground and then landing on your knuckles with your arms extended. I hope I'm explaining that ok... It may be that it's called something completely different. I'll search for a youtube video...

And actually I do do leg lifts and leg scissors and also knee raises with a roman chair, all mostly because I find that crunches and bicycle crunches etc, sorta miss out on the lower abs. Thanks for the advice though.

>>377954

I do a fair bit of sparring in class, the bag work I do is mostly for endurance training.

"Combat submissions"? LOL
u practice bullshido. navy seals dont know how to fight unarmed, their official style for unarmed combat is BJJ for fucks sake

>>377972
Okay. I would have just called it an (exploding) triceps pushup (arms run alongside body) on the knuckles, but it is your right as a martial artist to give awesome and/or fruity names to mundane movements.

My favorite

Tiger pushups eh...

Strength thraining, endurance training. Go for explosive speed, plyometrics, stuff like that. Also, if your name is Daniel and you're german, GTFO and go to bed.

I do Ju-Jutsu, because it's a lot of fun and very realistic (at least with the trainers I learn from). Also, you learn how to defend yourself against sticks, knives, chains and even guns (I KNOW there's like a 5% chance to defend against guns or knives, but the thing with sticks and chains CAN safe your ass if you are unlucky enough to walk into someone who actually uses them). Gun defense only when it's directly pointed at your head, it's impossible to defend if the gun is away from you more than some inches.

So basically I do it because it's realistic and the people I meet there twice a week are really cool, too, I mostly practice with people who are active in this sport for more then 15 years, so they know what they're talking about.

I'm german btw, so I'm sorry for mistakes I may have made...
