Isn't being interested in a cure rather counter intuitive to the disease? I don't think you're clinically depressed.

exercise. You will physically feel great from it...and since it will make you look better, society will accept you and make you feel great mentally

Drugs.

Srsly? I wish I could advise you on this myself but I haven't found much! Start out by doing things you enjoy doing, even if it's sitting on your ass watching TV that you like. (Yes /fit/, sit on your ass!) and gradually build up the strength to force yourself to do more.
After so much anxiety I forced myself to go to the gym, and I'm starting to wonder what I was anxious of in the first place.

Not OP, but you'd be surprised over what a vicious cycle it is, being depressed over being depressed, that sort of thing.

Some people believe St. John's Wort is helpful as an antidepressant... I think you can ingest it was a few drops into your drink instead of pills but I have never tried it myself. If you have a problem with antidepressants because they aren't "natural" then St. John's Wort could be a decent substitute, even though scientists are unsure whether it really works. But honestly, anon is right: exercise. It can be beneficial for your mood as long as you stick with it consistently.

Stop being depressed and do something with your life. You know what can make you happy, so do that shit and move on. It is that easy.

If you've really tried to improve your life and are still depressed, then go for the medicine. Other than that, no. Don't do it. The diagnosis just gives you a feeling of helplessness. Any what if it works? You'd have to take pills to feel happy?

That's like, totally lame, dude.

try jogging/lifting. natural release of endorphines after work outs. plus being in shape is a natural confidence booster.

>>Stop being depressed and do something with your life

Its not that easy
especially when depression runs in the family
i'm not using it as an execuse, but i haven't felt "Happy" since i was 14, i never thought anything of it, i just shrugged it off as puberty or some shit, now i'm 19 and that feeling has only gotten worst, to the point of hearing voices, and paralyzing chest pain and flashbacks

i'm not some HUEG neckbeard, and i ride my bike everywhere as opposed to driving my car

i am quite healthy
but these feelings, i can't shake them off, no matter what i do

don't get me wrong, i know people have it worst then i do, and i'll always help them out if they need me

but i just ain't right in the head
and its scary to think that meds are the only thing that can fix that

It's a lack of structure and goals. Purpose in life is everything. Obviously.

Take up boxing. Really. You get to beat the shit out of people, you get a good workout, and you get goals to work for.

Plus you will meet lots of people and socializing (under good circumstances) will always make you feel better.

K, I've had depression (well, diagnosed) since I was 14, everyone in my family has it.

And you know what I did about it? I realised the medical proffesion is constantly fucking wrong, and I don't need a doctor to tell me what I'm fucking feeling, if I'm sad, if I ahve trouble breathing, if I never get out of bed, that's just a choice I make.

They're all choices I've stopped making, and if I went to the same doctor he'd say I found some magical cure, I'd tell him it's called life and he should try getting some.

Go out with your friends, ignore the stupid doctors, get yourself laid, go to the gym (I find improving my self image has helped alot, from a scrawny 130lb at 6'1, to a progressively beefier 180, and still going up) just, live life and if some days you just can't handle it, don't worry about it, everyone has off days, just some people are more open and susceptible, but they go away with time, things get better if you MAKE them better.

Seriously, your emotions are choices, you can block out the ones you know you don't need to feel, you can focus on the good ones, you can stop feeling, not just block out the depression, but cure yourself if you understand it's a word, not a meaning, it means NOTHING, it's just a name for a bunch of things you do, that I used to do etc....

Seriously, only solution comes from your own mind.

turn your ideas into things. Become a musician, painter, writer.

Some people think you gotta bottle it up and move on, others find it therapeutic to identify their thoughts by bringing them to form.

>but i haven't felt "Happy"
No one feels happy on their own, you have to pick things to BE happy about.

Somewhere along the way happy changed from a state of being to an uncontrollable emotion, which it isn't. Fix that.

LISTEN TO SOME BUDDHIST PODCASTS, I am totally not shitting you. Im an atheist, and this shit has gotten me through some tough times. Buddhism is very introspective and you helps you to work on/understand yourself in a a very helpful way.

I would suggest "Zencast" and check out the talks by GIl Fronsdal(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_Fronsdal), my personal favorite teacher.

http://amberstar.libsyn.com/ (zencast)
http://www.audiodharma.org/talks-gil.html (shit load of additional talks by Fronsdal)

just download a couple with topics that sound interesting to you and give it a listen while you are driving or excersizing or laying in bed or whatever.

Should that fucking matter? Seriously, it's even more pretentious than when an atheist casually mentions his/her 140 IQ. Orly? Fuck off.

Or how about the fact that way more scientists are atheists.

its to imply that im not some sort of pot headed mystical douchenozzle who thinks that praying to a god or chanting some sort of sutra is going to make me some sort of interconnected spiritual being. Its to imply that im not the type of person who thinks that this kind of shit solves everything or that the world evolves around it. it has nothing to do with "oh im better than you".

If you weren't so insecure in your own "spirituality", you wouldn't have had been bothered.

Look here, faggot. That IS you.

Not ONCE in this thread have you talked about what you've done to help yourself besides go to see doctors. Then you say " it's not that easy". Fuck you.

I was in a depression study at Duke... exercise was as effective as medication, but it kicks in a LOT faster. (I was in the exercise group.)

The key was to have a heart rate monitor and to keep at a target zone for at least 20 minutes straight during aerobic exercise. I noticed results in the first week and, hey, a gym membership tends to be cheaper than medications and shrink visits.

anti depressants aren't as bad as some people presume them to be, you just have to find the one that works for you.

other than that, sunshine helps (although it may be the last thing you feel you need when you're depressed) and doing anything to keep your mind busy. even if it's something lame like crossword puzzles.

but, most of the time, it's not something you can entirely fix on your own. there's a chemical imbalance in your brain, it's not just feeling blue or crap like that. don't be afraid to talk to a professional about it.
