hey guys, I was looking at this guy's food logs in his early weight loss phase.
http://www.johnstonefitness.com/menus/may_2003_history.html
He makes great progress if you look through his site, and went from 30% BF to 8% in about 4 months.

anyway one thing confused me... he does weight training 3 times a week, but according to the food log he does weight training and HIIT on the same days, on an empty stomach. I thought weight training on an empty stomach was counterproductive? Without carbs/glycogen you wouldn't be able to push yourself much, and I assume having some protein in you is ideal also. So is it folly to lift on an empty stomach, or is fine as long as you eat a big breakfast right afterwards?

Also... cardio and lifting in the same session seems to be pretty frowned upon... but he seems to do this as well. Thoughts?

He does lifting first then cardio, you still have glycogen stored from the previous day. Lifting will use up glycogen in the body, then the cardio will start using fat as an energy source quicker. I do the same on lifting days by finishing with 25-30 mins cardio, just finished now.

what the fuck, this goes against every goddamn thing that's been stated on /fit/ so far. cut and bulk they said. mother fuckers.

And you think everything on /fit/ is the truth? No, its a matter of personal opinion.

op here... I think as a beginner it's alright to do both at the same time. Even without proper bulking nutrition it's possible to make strength gains when you have very little muscle.

Ask yourself this: did paleolithic me, who were huge and shared our genotype almost exactly, drink gainer drinks all day? No, they went without food quite often. 'Modern' bodybuilding is based on the notion that you must increase IGF1, and thus insulin, to grow. However, adults are meant to put on lean mass with growth hormone. Insulin is a growth hormone antagonist. Thus, it is best to eat low carb -preferably paleo - and do your hardest workouts in a fasted state. It works for me - I have a serious back injury but even I can gain mass this way and stay really, really lean. Don't believe me? Google up pics of some papua new guinea natives. Think they down gainer drinks all the time?

It'll still train the central nervous system, and often you can increase your results even when you're not actually gaining muscle

Everbody turn brown when dey get dem mussels.

If you really look he didn't gain very much muscle at all. He just learned how to pose and got leaner/tanner.

Also, the "video" he has on his site is complete bullshit. Look at some of the differences between frames compared to how long he's claiming it took him.

TL;DR = he just cut and flexed, noobs.

John Stone is a very motivating guy, his site is where I first learned about how to take care of myself and have lost 100lbs of fat and am now bulking. I think you misread his food logs, I know John likes to do fasted LISS, but I am pretty sure he avoids fasted HIIT like the plague. Also the reason he isnt so lean in the original pics is cause he is currently on a bulk and having some real life drama.

Paleolithic man died in his 30s

That dude looks freaky as shit. I'd rather be fat than have bleach blond surfer hair.

And the Neolithic man died even earlier in his lifetime. Lifespan did not increase until advances in medicine and sanitation which occured just recently.
