The cold water will assist in recovery (blood vessels contract, small muscle tears repaired); same logic as for ice baths. In addition, depending on your stroke and style swimming can be used as an effective cool down or, if you are swimming laps for endurance, it can be more effective than running.

My goal is basically to just get stronger (from lifting, obviously) and get a lot more endurance, I don't really care about asthetics, so if I don't get bigger while still progressing strength-wise then that is fine with me.
