Modafinil is a sleep preventer. That's about it. You feel like a goddamned zombie, and you're perfectly aware of the effects of sleep deprivation as they come, you're just not sleepy. I've talked to a few previous users, and they whole-heartedly agree. Studying? Projects? Nah, stick with real stims. Need to prevent dozing off for 16 hours straight (ridiculously long car drive)? Modafinil might be a good choice.
Caffeine and ephedrine are way better for staying awake and enhancing cognitive function, and stuff like choline, coenzyme Q10, fish oil, creatine (no srsly), and a couple others I can't remember right now are good for enhancing brain power and "endurance". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Nootropics
Modafinil is pretty cool in a way though. You don't develop a resistance to it, and a small dose seems to magnify the effects of caffeine. However, when you consider that you might get in trouble for having it without a prescription (actually lol, not likely), the inconvenience in obtaining it, and the relative price, it might be nice to have around, but it's not something I would use too often.
