Alcoholism. At what point would you consider yourself to be beyond the limit of healthy partaking and into the realms of debilitating illness? Or, rather, failure as a human being as I'd rather consider it.

once you start drinking alone for no purpose, you're an alcoholic

I drink to calm my nerves, whenever I meet new people or I have to call someone official. Like the boss or a bank, customer support etc.
Not alcoholic though.

That isn't really true though, everyone always does something for a reason. There is no such thing as "no purpose."

If you drink to feel "good" you're in the danger zone I'd say. Extreme danger if you drink to feel "anything at all."

If you just drink for the sake of getting drunk and you do it constantly because you like the feeling you're an alcoholic.

If you have a beer or whatever alone you aren't an alcoholic.

You, sir, are an idiot. Taste is subjective. I, for one, have found stuff up to 42% that I like for taste or "afterburn". I also like dark beers, most of which are 8% or above. And it relaxes me in social situations so I don't come off as a jittering retard that I am. Haven't had any in a long time though... A price one pays to be /fit/.

when you need a drink to go to work or school
or if you need a drink to go to sleep at all

find a blood alcohol calculator on line. penalties for drunk driving are really really harsh. never drink more than that much so you can't get a DUI. It's also not a bad guideline for how much to drink.

For me alcohol was a solution and to a great extent it worked. I joined the military at 18 and a I had a hard time adjusting to the life. The work was fine and I was capable, but I had a hard time dealing with the idea that my life was, at times, in the hands of people I wouldn't trust with a fucking butter knife. Alcohol helped me get away for a while. My friends thought I was an alcoholic, but in my mind I just had a way of dealing with the stresses that didn't involve being overly aggressive or emo.

I had an adjustment period when I left the service, but I've been clean for five years now. The stress is gone. The alcohol is gone. I'd invite people to look at their relationships and environment before they blame the bottle. Yes, heavy drinking isn't healthy, but sometimes it's simply a reaction to something tangible and serious.
