How bad is it to lock your knees when you stand?

I've been doing it for a long time without realising you weren't supposed to.

What conditions, problems etc can result?

Doing it all my life. No problems thus far.

I've heard from many people that it's bad but they don't know why.

WTF? Of course it's okay to lock your knees when you stand. Our legs are designed to do it, that's we're bipedal and primates aren't.

If you lock your knees for a long period, you can cut off blood flow and faint.

That's such a bullshit myth. Please explain how locking your knees prevents blood from flowing to your brain.

That doesn't explain anything; it's a myth. There is no artery that is cut off when you lock your knees, no veins, in fact, if anything, it takes the load off the muscles in your legs so your heart doesn't have to pump as much blood to them. This means there is more for your brain.

Stand up and lock your knees, let us all know how long it takes you to faint.

Your knees could get kind of sore if you do it for hours and hours? Nothing terrible is going to happen to you.

You're not supposed to stand like that? I've been doing that my whole life...

Some really fat guy fell onto a bunch of people (he was on the top teir of some bleachers) at a grade school class photo because he was locking his knees and subsequently fainted.

That or he was just too exhausted from standing and lied and said he locked his knees.

Actually,

I do get really tired standing up with my knees locked for extended periods of time.

Nice.

It's true. I was in ROTC in high school, and one of the girls in my class fainted during an inspection. It was shocking, but now that I think of it, it was kinda funny.

seconded. at ocs for the usmc, during inspections a couple people would invariably pass out. during graduation 2 people passed out, one broke him teeth on his rifle, the other cracked his face open like a melon. granted, the fucking hot ass weather and humidity doesn't help, but the lack of blood flow sure doesn't help.

tl;dr don't lock your knees.

I do it too.

Ha ha. I was always afraid that I would pass out in plays in school and stuff, for standing like that.
