Anyone ever do HIIT with stairs?

I tried today, but sprinting "all out" up stairs meant that I was at the top after....8-10 seconds. maybe 12. I got up, went down about 4 times...THEN i started breathing heavily. I said "fuck this" and decided to HOP up each step as fast as possible.

THIS really got me good, and I was feeling in pain at the top.... but it wasnt as painful as I would've been if I had been sprinting all out.

How do you accomplish a good HIIT workout on stairs?

not at all. NOT AT ALL. Stairs utilizes a LOT more core and fast-twitch muscle activity. It is MUCH more explosive. You also have to work a LOT harder keeping your abs tight and body upright, in ADDITION to fighting-back forward falling momentum.

A steep hill is fine too. In fact, it would be better because you can run exactly the way you feel is best and not be confined to the arbitrary measurements of the stairs. Also a hill in the middle of a forest would provide a level of varying terrain and perhaps difficult terrain both of which would tire you even more.

Usually I do HIIT once a week on stairs because of how much it kicks my ass, and it exhausts my quads. I recommend finding a huge flight of stairs, and running downstairs on your low intervals, or, if you're desperate, hop on a stair climber at the gym. Thing I don't like about the second one is that it is hard to balance without using the railings, but if you do, you're focusing your weight else where, hence lowering your heart rate.
