Is it possible to lose weight by mainly swimming? Whenever I go to the gym, I always get bored, and by the end i'm just doing stuff half assed. But I can easily swim for 2 hours+ without getting bored.

tl;dr - Is it possible to lose weight by mainly swimming and doing a little cardio on the side?

Question first: Isn't swimming a form of cardio?

Yep. Swimming is actually one of the best exercises you can do, as it places virtually no stress on your joints.

i'm an air breather. i just get freaked out being submerged and not being able to breathe freely. another thing is for some reason i seem to produce more mucous than the average person (especially when running) so i cough and clear my throat fairly often and that obviously CANNOT happen underwater. i can swim, just not for very long at a competitive pace.

Swimming is great

I swim a little under half a mile 4 times a week and do 1 and 1/2 hours on the elliptical machine 4 times a week. In the last month I have dropped 33 pounds between diet and exercise.

Also fat doesn't magically turn into muscle. It doesnt work like that.

So 30 laps one day and 30 minutes high resistance the next, and continue alternating for 6 weeks? Or swim everyday with biking on and off?

I've recently lost a ton of weight and am just about at my sweet spot, but i want to start "toning" up and i've been looking at swimming. I've already been walking/running for a while and do some mild calisthenics.

So would swimming with snorkel gear with no fins still get the same results? (I'm not a strong swimmer) If I didn't have to worry about the breathing part I can swim all day.

LOOK EVERYBODY WHO WANTS CARDIO!!! IF YOU ARE OUT OF BREATH AFTER AN HOUR, BUT NO SOONER, YOU ARE DOING GOOD CARDIO.

Don't wear fins, gives you propulsion making it easier.

Nothing wrong with the mask and snorkel if you deem it necessary I guess.. considering I don't swim at a public indoor pool at a gym or anything I wouldn't know how odd you'd look wearing it though.

lol I probably do look silly but not as bad as the guys with the speedos in their butts. (screw them anyway, I pay my 50 bucks every month.) I just didn't want to be swimming with lessened results.
