Judofag here. Been doing it for about a month now. It's really fun and a really good workout. Before that, never did any martial arts or wrestling. Never really roughhoused with friends or siblings when I was younger. It's something totally new and foreign to me.
Unfortunately, a couple Wednesdays back, a few people there were getting ready to go to a tournament the following weekend, so we did a lot of randori. It was my first time doing randori, and I got thrown on my back. Hard. I'm pretty sure I cracked a rib and did something to my back. I don't think it's anything serious, though, and hopefully practice tomorrow won't aggravate it too much.
Anyway, ground fighting is much more fun than standing fighting, but being able to grip fight and throw someone on their back is much more useful if you're in a fight. Also, in sport judo, if you don't throw your opponent well enough, you have to keep your opponent on his back for 25 seconds, make him tap, break his arm, or choke him until he taps or passes out, most of which would be ideal in a real fight.
