'Sup /fit/.

How effectvie is martial arts at helping to lose weight? I'm not really that fat, it's pretty much all around my gut, but would something like Ninjutsu or Karate help tone it?
I guess if nothing else it's a good Cardio workout?
Also, anything else that would help to get rid of a 'beer-belly' would help.

Pic, whilst related, not me.

The fitness warm up session for my Muay Thai classes are fucking brutal. I go to the swimming fitness circuit sessions and it's nothing compared to what they dish out at MT.

Lol, Ninjutsu and Karate are complete parallels amirite? ;>_>

The good thing about martials arts is that you have a set time for practices and it keeps you on schedule. You will get exercise there but I think that the schedule part is the most beneficial.

Also OP best chance to find out is to go to a class of one and watch or ask if you can try it out for free or whatever, see what it does for you.

A lot depends on the people who teach any given art.

But yes, push yourself properly every time you train and don't slack off --> get benefits.

People have some fantasies about martial arts. You'll likely do 20 minutes of fitness/warming up in a 60 minute lesson.

These 20 minutes will be jogging, press-ups, sit-ups and the like; nothing you couldn't do at home.

Karate isn't a very extensive work-out itself, to be honest. Fuck off all you "not doing it right"'ers. It's tiring but I doubt it burns many calories. I'm a black belt and I doubt karate actually does much for my fitness in of itself.

thing is, while you COULD do them at home. you don't get pushed anywhere as close to the limit as you would in the training session.

Sanchin Kata in Goju Ryu karate and Uechi Ryu karate if done with proper tension will give you a work out, it will exercise every muscle in your body. It is a form of isometric and dynamic tension exercise. Plus it will teach you how to hit and block with a lot of force, not to mention teaching stable stance. You just have to have a competent teacher. Sanchin should be done 40 minutes a day to see results. I have heard that overweight people should not do sanchin as they migt get a heart attack.]

Sanchin will make you stronger and give you slightly bigger but definitely more defined muscle.
