I biked for a few years before I started my new job (no time now) and I worked up to 10 miles in 30 minutes (my subdivision is exactly a mile around) and rode for an hour or so per day. Just cycle as much as you can for the ride, while keeping an eye on your heart rate. Don't count the miles because you'll mentally prepare your body for stopping at the 6 mile mark (which is pretty puny for a bike ride). Your body doesn't really start burning fat calaories until you reach 15-30 minutes, or until you've burned off the sugars and non-stored fats. So wait a while after eating if you're looking to lose weight and drink only water or a low calorie sports drink and don't have anything high-calorie right after the ride either.
