Go to youtube and watch Mark Rippetoe's instruction.

As for OP: Take two bricks on each side of the floor or similar to get the correct lifting height.
Put the empty bar on those bricks and then lift.
Increase weight slowly each workout if you can.
Olympic plates are this big, so you don't have to go down even further.
