For a cheap pair of adjustable dumbbells, going as heavy as you'd like:
1. Go to Home Depot, and pick up 8 hose clamps, and two lengths of 3/4" (inner diameter) galvanized pipe... 14-18" ought to be right, depending on if you plan on going REALLY heavy or not. 2. On each pipe, place two hose clamps spaced from the middle with enough room to fit your hand comfortably. 3. Sand down the pipe ends, working at each hose clamp and working towards the tip. (The outer diameter of the pipe is about 1.2", you want it just less than 1".) 4. Pick up a shitload of those 1" diameter plates off of Craig's List. Ten bucks can go a long way there. 5. Slide the plates onto the pipes (sand more if the plates don't fit right), and add the other hose clamps on the ends. Two or three turns of a screwdriver will make those hose clamps TIGHT, but you can easily unscrew them to take them off and change the weight.
