hey /fit/, for guys, is Yoga an effective way to lose wieght? My brother does it (he is a hockey goalie so flexibility is key) and he wants me to do it as well.

I'd check it out but its like 200 bucks to get started and I'm not sure if I want to spend the money if its just a waste of time.

do yoga at home. save money. use a thick towel for a yoga mat if you need one. youtube & video sites are full of yoga materials.
it will slim you down. and it feels good (like runners high)

It can also destabilize joints if you do it incorrectly.

I haven't done static stretches for years as a precaution and because I find dynamic warm-ups to be much more effective, but is there good science behind the theory that static stretches actually make you weaker?

OP, you can learn yoga from the Internets, and since your brother does it, he can correct your form if it's shit. If you think it'll help, give it a try.
