I have spent my life taking sleeping pills. It depends on who you are. I can take 4-5 maximum strength unisoms and still be alright the next day. At around 6 though, you can feel it for about the next 30 hours. 7 will fuck you up pretty bad. The regular strength ones are probably half as strong or so, again depending on who you are. Take one if you haven't tried them before, it might be more than enough. I know people who can get knocked out on 1/4 of a pill
Here's something to note though: Sleeping pills aren't a good long-term substitute for sleep AT ALL. Taking one every week or so is probably okay, but you don't want to make a habit of it. It's not good for you and is typically less healthy than just going with the insomnia and taking naps in the day. This is straight out of my doctors mouth.
Melatonin does nothing at all for some people, but it can depend A LOT on the dose. I used to take 20+g a night, and I found that 2-3 works better.
