It's not a mysterious effect, consuming sugars, even in the form of other quickly-digested carbohydrates will increase your insulin level, and increase your blood sugar levels, which in turn puts your body into storage mode. The rest of what you said is the typical anti-HFCS blathering.
Developing obesity and diabetes is due to overeating and excessive consumption of empty calories. If we didn't have HFCS but the same snack-driven fast food culture in place, we'd still have a society of fatties, but now they'd be blaming, oh, whatever. salt, i dunno. As far as diabetes, that is...well, there is somewhat of a argument to that, but once again, a lot of the developed diabetes is either due to fatness or excessive consumption/shitty diets in general.
