Why is /fit/ so obsessed with protein? Half the recommendations on this board include adding protein to your diet. Doesn't /fit/ know that protein exceeding 20% of your caloric intake hurts your body? Over ingestion of protein leads to stress on the kidneys and is correlated to calcium loss in urine. And it does NOT increase your muscle gain.

Just like anything else, over doing protein is bad for you.

Has anyone here ever checked their urine for ketones?

It's fairly hard to overdo protein, but it is really easy to not have enough, hence the recommendation to add protein.

Also, those food pyramids blow, they only cover average people who don't exercise very often

you know that pyramid is shit when they put beans under vegetables

It's not easy to not have enough protein unless you live in a third world country. The average Western diet eats more than their share of protein through animal products (probably getting very little from dark greens or nuts).

If you don't exercise maybe...

Take a look at the physiques of the people pushing more protein. Then take a look at the physiques of the dietitians.

I'm much more inclined to take nutrition advice from people who not only train the most elite-athletes in the world but ARE the most elite athletes in the world, than take it from some pudgy dietitian telling me I'm going to get renal failure from eating too much chicken.

Basically I'm not going to deny that weight lifters and the like might need more protein than normal, but the average Western diet is already above the recommended RDA, by a considerable amount. So body builders might think they need more, but they already have plenty in their diets; soo when they add protein shakes and bars and whatever else, it leads to a dangerous amount of protein in their system. If you drink alcohol on top of that, your seriously stressing out your kidneys.

I'm just going by common sense and what I've learned, not by what one meat head thinks and the age old misconception of insert protein ??? profit of muscles.

You have to think about your body as a whole. But I'm sure the problem with many people is they'll do anything to their body as long as they get one desirable factor, not caring for the rest of it.

Drink more water. Helps flush the kidneys and does good for your body in general. Everyone wins.
>> Anonymous
you need at least .75-1g of protein per day per pound if you're seriously training. for me that would be 124-165g per day.. which is managable with 2 protein shakes and a big helping of meat for dinner

Then show me one case where excess protein caused kidney failure in a person with otherwise healthy kidneys.

You're going to have a hard time, cause there isn't one.

Even easier, show me one study that shows a positive correlation between high protein intake and kidney damage in a person with healthy kidneys from the start.

Again, good luck with that one.

Just because what I've said differs from a lot of people's on this board doesn't mean I'm trolling. It's called a discussion.

Try harder to make up excuses to why you can't contribute.

I have that same problem and I eat a decent amount of fiber (WOO Kashi mini wheats), it's just that the poop rockets out of my ass like jagged rocks and makes me bleed sometimes.

My family must have small assholes though, because my Grandmom got an operation to actually enlarge hers. True story.
