Hey, /fit/. I started running 3 weeks ago and doing weights at the gym. Since it's still early, I decided to ask how to get longer, leaner muscles instead of short, kind of bulky muscles? I know I won't look like a body builder since I'm a woman and I don't have the testosterone, but i'm not sure how to go about getting the kind of muscle I want. Yes, I've been eating protein (mostly turkey and chicken or eggs) and yes, I've been doing hiit. If you need my height and weight just ask.

Lift HEAVY.

Pilates is recommended a lot for people wanting lean muscle, but I don't know.

There is only one type of muscle and that's muscle.
You can't train for lean muscle or some such nonsense.
LIFT HEAVY and post your tits.

Why does /fit/ only lift heavy? What about medium and light? HUH? HUH?

Cause that doesn't do jackshit.
Your body adapts to the strain you put it in.
You want muscle, then lift heavy.

Medium and light is for faggots. Lift HEAVY or get the fuck out.

I started light and I'm building it up every once and a while. Is that ok?

Swimming is the best solution for you if you don't want to bulk, you will gain muscle mass, specially slow twitch fibers (resistance over strength) and it's a wonderful cardio.
But as a side note, if you are a woman, is going to be really difficult to you to gain a lot of mass, just keep your working routine for some months, i'm pretty sure you are going to make progress but you will not become bulky at hall.

Completely ok, that's how everyone does it.
Slow and steady more weight.

Start lifting as heavy as you fucking can, until muscle failure. You will NOT get big. I've been doing this for months and I am not big, plus I'm a guy.

I respect a woman in the gym who actually ventures out of the cardio room and lifts some weights, but it's extremely rare, and when they do.. they're lifting 5 lb dumbells or something stupid.

Look at this girl's biceps... they look pretty good to me. It would probably take months to even get your arms that big.

Lifting only heavy is retarded. Reps god damn it. Maxing out every fucking day isn't smart.

Try years of training

As a side note, what the fuck with this fascination with strength training, i prefer to work resistance because it's actually useful in real life.

THIS.

So many idiots have such a backwards idea of weight training that it breaks my immense heart.

Training for strength does not make you baloon up to Coleman proportions overnight. You'd have to juice and work your entire life to even come anywhere near to that size.

I lift heavy... and whilst I'm not a skinny little twig, I'm not a walking wall of muscle. I fill out normal t-shirts and my back is pretty wide, but that's about it, it looks natural... taking on proportions that a strong human is supposed to take on.

Strength is pretty damn useful in real life; provided you do something other than sit inside and watch tv or surf /fit/ all day.

Train for strength and train for resistance. DONE.

The key is balance.

Just stretch the affected muscles after each set so you don't get squash biceps or some shit like that, has been working out pretty well so far.

Most of /fit/ doesn't realize that there are multiple kinds of fibres within the muscular tissue, and that different exercises increase these different fibres. You need to do stuff for Explosive, Strength-Endurance, Maximal-Strength all require different exercises. A lot of /fits/ goal is hypertrophy and HOW MUCH I LIFT.

If you're looking for tone, which is what you seem to be--something like swimming and medium/low weight/high reps would be best.

That is why you take a middle road between super high reps for size and 1 rep for power.

Go for 5 reps with heavy weight for the best of boths worlds in that regard.
