Swimming uses a lot of muscles just to move around. Different strokes use different muscle groups, so focusing on all of them you get the most benefit. The fact that it's not all sprinting unless you're in an actual competition makes it a good aerobic workout.
I swam in high school and lost weight from pigging out over the summers like nobody's business. It didn't take more than a month and a half to be back down to my swimming weight, and then i was mixing in weight training with swimming.
Think of it as jogging but your arms do more than keep you in stride/on balance. You can't not help but get in good shape from it. Best bang for your time.
