Dear /fit/, I have an underbite, pic related, but it's not my teeth. Also, my top teeth is a little offset to one side. Both these conditions don't really seem to affect me in any noticeable way, and they aren't that bad of conditions either. There seems to be enough space between my top and bottom teeth that i can stick my tongue a bit more than i should when my teeth are clenched. Also, i tend to have my mouth open alot, but that might be from a habit when i used to have a bad nose and always breathed through my mouth. Lastly, i don't know if this might be problem from that too, but chewing gum, my jaw gets sore after a while.

What does /fit/ think i should do? Get surgery? Am i overreacting? It doesn't really seem to affect me but i've been reading a little and it seems underbites should be corrected but the surgery is a hefty cost... also my top teeth are little offset too so...

Surgery?

What happened to braces?

I dunno, that's why i'm looking for advice, can braces fix this? I thought it needed surgery... or should i even do anything if it doesn't really seem to affect me?

Underbites are kind of ugly, so if it's prominent, I'd visit an orthodontist.

The can be fixed with braces, and I'd never recommend dental surgery. Veneers etc. are difficult to maintain and very invasive.

see an orthodontist. some over/underbites can be fixed by braces alone, and some cases require surgery along with braces.

it's not an uncommon surgery, though. i'm having it done this summer to fix my massive overbite.. they just cut your bone and slide your bottom jaw forward or backward. sometimes they need to mess with your upper jaw a bit too. only an orthodontist can tell you if you'll need it tho

and i don't mean to imply it's an easy surgery, it's painful and can take quite a while to recover from. usually an ortho can compromise, and fix your bite as much as possible without surgery, but the results with the surgery are worth it if your jaw/teeth are bad enough IMO.

This might be odd, (OP Here) but i don't even know if i have any health insurance or anything like that, i never go to the doctor for checkups/etc. The only time i ever go to doctors if its something severe, which hasn't been for a couple of years. When i was younger i went to a dentist, not in the US, where i currently live at. My family is sorta independent like that, so i'm not too entirely sure about these things. We don't really have any health benefits from work because we aren't like normal US jobs, we own our own restaurant businesses and we try to save money.

so.. get health insurance? they might not cover it if you need the surgery though, some of them view it as 'cosmetic'.

i got my braces at some dental school thing, so that was pretty cheap.

I have an under-bite too. I also had/have health insurance. I had to go through YEARS of braces palette splitters, I even had to sleep in a face-mask which kinda made me look like Hannibal Lector at some point because my orthodontist thought it would be able to correct it. It didn't. I went through all the surgical consults and was denied repeatedly by HAP. Basically no insurance will cover the surgery, and it'll cost you $20.000 to get it done by a hack. On the plus side my under-bite isn't that noticeable and it really doesn't effect me very much so it really isn't THAT bad.

i've heard from quite a few people who got their insurance to cover it, at least partially.. it seems like you just have to make a tons of phone calls and have a lot of luck.

shitsucks that some won't cover it, though.

I'm almost kinda glad I didn't qualify. When the surgeon was describing the surgery and the recovery time... he said I'd be black and blue from my nipple up to my face... which made me wonder what exactly they'd be doing to me while I was under... also since my front and bottom jaw aren't aligned they wanted to cut out and rewire in my teeth basically... not to mention the whole mouth being wired shut thing. Surgery just seems really extreme to me now and not something I'd consider anymore.

I have a pretty decent underbite. It doesn't interfere with my ability to eat or speak, so I don't see any reason to have something done about it.

jesus fucking christ whats so bad about a under bite, makes you look more manly having your mouth appear like a cavemans.

as you age, your bite will worsen and can start to cause TMJ, among other problems. usually that's only with bigger under/overbites, but you never know
