Fixed Gear aka FIXIE Anonymous
A fixed-gear bicycle or fixed wheel bicycle, is a bicycle without the ability to coast. The sprocket is screwed directly on to the hub and there is no freewheel mechanism. A reverse-thread lockring is usually fitted to prevent the sprocket from unscrewing. Whenever the rear wheel is turning, the pedals turn in the same direction.By resisting the rotation of the pedals, a rider can slow the bike to a stop, without the aid of a brake.A fixed gear bicycle can even be ridden in reverse.
Most fixed gear bicycles only have one gear ratio. Some have a sprocket on each side of the rear hub, giving the choice of using one of two different gear ratios. Such a hub may have a fixed gear on each side (double-fixed) or a fixed gear on one side and a freewheel gear on the other (fixed-free). To change gear, it is necessary to remove, reverse and refit the rear wheel.Typically, the number of teeth on the sprockets will differ by one or two, for example 19 teeth on one side and 17 on the other, making the latter gear some 11 or 12% higher than the former (for the same chainring).

So, is anyone riding one of those things?

Well I was thinking of getting one, because I don't own a car. But I need to coast : /

i have a surly steamroller. people love to bitch about how stupid it is to ride a track bike on the road but they are great for leg strength. really helped me up my 1rm squat and fix my stubborn calves.

I am not a faggot, so I do not ride a fixed-gear bicycle. No matter what any hipster douchebag tells you, no, it's not easier to climb hills/brake/negotiate traffic on a "fixie." So the bike weighs a pound or two less. The ability to maintain a strong cadence by appropriate gear selection trumps that by far.

The best thing about them is the fact that they make an excellent heuristic mechanism; any person on a fixed-gear bicycle is 99% likely to be a worthless pile of assbirth.

people who ride fixies aren't actual cyclists. they are just people trying to commute. using a track bike for actual cycling is stupid. On the other hand, its great for commuting in the city since you can lock it up and not worry about someone fucking up your derailer.

In a flat city a track bike is great, especially if you leave it outside... But yeah, worthless for real cycling... I have my nice road bikes to train/race on but I still like to take my old steel fixie out on the town occasionally.

it defeats the purpose of buying/riding a fixie when you set it up with deep v's or aerospokes. fixies are supposed to be cheap beater bikes for commuting that dont look like utter trash

I do not ride a fixie. Nor do I drink PBR, wear a ski cap in the middle of summer, sport a neck beard, or listen to Old Crow Medicine Show.
