I am 5'10" and 185-190 lbs. A year ago I was 285. I lost the weight mostly from a total lifestyle change, going from a desk job to a super active job. After losing the first bit of weight I started eating better, but never needed to work out in my free time. Now work has slowed down for a couple of months and even when it's busy it isn't such a challenge anymore, so I have had to work out elsewhere so I don't plateau. Does anyone have any advice as to where to go from here? The weight loss has slowed down a lot already and I'd like to drop more weight before I decide if I am wanting to bulk up next. I have been using an elliptical machine, usually staying on it for an hour at just 5mph. I'm thinking about going out jogging tomorrow to avoid the commute to the gym. Is it significantly harder than the elliptical? Am I going to run three blocks and want to die?

Picture is related, it's a before shot.

Show us the after shot so we know you're worth our time.

It's different, but you should be ok as long as you didn't slack on the Eliptical

IF you have trouble losing weight maybe it's time to start a small bulking. Just bulk for 3 weeks, then your metabolism should raise a little and you can continue cutting

Congratulations ^_^

Keep up the good work! Always keep this in mind:

1. Strength
2. Cardio
3. Diet
4. Flexibility
5. Variety

1. Strength - Lift weights, the more muscle you gain, the more calories you burn. Therefore, more fat reduction.

2. Cardio - The elliptical is good but try the stair master. It burns nearly double the energy compared to running and you won't have to worry about wearing down your knees. However, if you do want to run, keep your running to short, comfortable distances until you get used to it. Use the google maps to plan your route so you can get a distance.

3. Diet - I'm sure you already know what to do. Just keep it to small, healthy meals every three hours. Remember, SMALL meals.

4. Flexibility - Not many people emphasize this but it's very important. Flexibility decreases the chance of injury and makes working out easier. Best to stretch a lot in the evenings then, before you workout during the day, stretch enough to just warm up.

As for lifestyle, start dancing. You keep yourself busy, meet fun people, and get one hell of a workout.

Anyway, good luck and never give up. You may have a long way to go but make it fun and, before you know it, you'll be exactly the way you hope to be.

Oops, forgot variety.

5. Variety - Always do something different every day. That way while a part of you rests, the other continues to work out. Try swimming, biking, hiking, long walks, basketball, etc..

I went from 275 to 200 in a year or so.

I'd look as good as you if I didn't have gyno. Damn cruel life.

OP here. Thank you very much for typing that out. Yeah I think the next step is probably weights since I've done very little of that so far. And yeah, I have never been much of a dancer, but then again I do have a lot more energy so maybe it's worth a shot. Yes it is a nicer apartment, with a giant ass mirror on the wall.

I must agree - start on weights. Also start a slow cardio program - your best bet is to start some slow interval training - run for 30 seconds and walk 4 and a half minutes at 13km/h. That's a really, really easy cardio workout. Add 30 seconds to it if it's too easy.

You'll start losing weight and looking SEXY.

op again. i have been thinking about shaving just to see how it looks honestly. i think i've had the beard as man makeup for years and now i'm just afraid to give it up. i didn't end up working out at all today because i had an unexpected friend in town stranded at the greyhound, but i didn't cheat on the diet like i have in the past in similar situations and i'll try jogging tomorrow for sure. if i get winded i can always do the run some walk some method.

Congrats; keep up the good work!

Weights are good; start small and work your way up. While /fit/ thinks squatz are the best workout (they aren't, deadlifts work more muscles according to Weider and Co.), you can do a lot of good dumbbell stuff.

Look at torrenting P90x, particularly for the Yoga X and Cardio X, just to mix it up. Yoga X is especially good for flexibility, especially if you have any idea what most of the poses are.

Keep it up Anon, keep it up!

Yeah, I agree. Start some structured lifting and I think you'll like the results. Think body shaping not just shrinking.
