I prefer room-temperature over cool, and cool over cold because if I'm thirsty I'm going to drink something with the intention of replenishing lost fluids, not 'cooling down' while remaining dehydrated as fuck because I can't consume the rest of my beverage without further aggravating the migraine-nerve on the roof of my mouth/sensitive teeth.
Whenever I see a hot/thirsty person sip on less than 3-oz of ice water and stop, I secretly wince, knowing the damage their probably doing to their desert-dry kidneys.
All that being said, everything is better than soda, and if he needs a little flavor try lemon or lime in the water or diluted juice/gatorade. Or man up and drink it down cuz it's good for you.
