The snow has finally melted for good, meaning it's time to stop delaying my exercise.
I want to do some exercise in the mornings and evenings by jogging (and some muscle toning every other day). I can bike for hours on end (not leisure biking, but really pushing myself. Uphill. Both ways), but jogging makes me feel absolutely pathetic. 5 minutes in, I'm feeling winded, and have to take a break soon after. I'm 195 pounds, 5'11", male. I stretch before I head out.
I know I'll build up an endurance soon, but I could really use a shortcut. 5 - 10 minute bursts are seriously demoralizing. Help?

Wrong term? Maybe... focused muscle tensing?

You only gain by infringing on your comfort zone. Thus, the only way to improve your endurance is to run out of it regularly. Sorry =(

Also, tone as most people use it is very incorrect. I assume you're referring to weight lifting, yes? That doesn't make muscles more visible; only lowering your body fat % makes muscles more visible.

Just got to 'suck it up'? Better than nothing.
The toning is for the muscle itself, not the personal appearance. I just want to make my body more useful. Also, I can watch TV while I work up a small sweat (leg exercises kill me!)

Let me change topic. How should I be breathing when I jog? I've been told breathing with your gut instead of your chest is the most effective way to go (not the best use of terms there, but you know what I mean, right?)

take one deep breath and then hold it for as long as possible. don't exhale at all. that way you get more of a training effect.

Hmmm. Interesting. If I hold my breath long enough, maybe I'll float home and save myself the walk.
Fine fine I'm out of here.
