If it's a gym that throws you into the ring on your first day to "see what you've got", leave. It's not a good gym.
A good gym will teach you basics, run you through drills, work up your cardio, and gradually work you towards sparring.
You don't need shit. Just some shorts, a mouthguard, and some wrestling shoes (they're cheaper than boxing shoes, and work just as well).
After a while, you'll probably want your own headgear, because it sucks having to use the blood-encrusted one owned by the gym. Also, once things come together and you learn to hit harder, you'll probably want to buy some hand wraps.
