Tea, Coffee, and Caffeine. The Inverted Jogger !E203O4hsXo
Your daily knowledge ingestion!

This is just a small post while I compile a more serious topic. Since my last post was about Sugar and artificial sweeteners, I thought it’d be a good idea to do this post.

Since pop and other sugary beverages are best cut out, what should I be drinking? Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world, and Coffee is quickly following behind it. So what kind of Tea/Coffee should I be drinking?

Today I’ll talk about the different kinds of tea, which to drink, which to stay away from, and why decaff is just as good as caffeinated coffee!

If you’ve ever wondered, when glancing over the wall of teas at your local grocer, “Which one is best for me?” your about to find out. Let me begin with the two most commonly drank teas.

Black tea is perhaps the most commonly drank tea in Europe and North America, and it is also perhaps the worst kind of tea you can drink. Black tea sachets often contain both sugar and caffeine (more at the end), and will always contain tannins, a product used in the tanning process of leather. We already know what sugar can do to us, but what about tannins? Well recent studies have associated consumption of black tea en-masse to the development of stomach and bowel cancer. The health benefits of this tea are dwarfed in comparison by other teas, and made moot by its health risks.

Green tea is the most commonly drank tea in Asia and is becoming increasingly popular world wide. Green tea is an amazing beverage and it does not contain the sugar or tannins of the black variety. However green tea still contains caffeine, so if you’re looking for a caffeine free alternative, make sure you buy “decaffeinated green tea”. Green tea has been linked to alleviating tens of problems commonly seen in the body, most primarily because of its high levels of anti-oxidants. However Green tea is still not the healthiest variety. Shocking I know!

White tea is becoming very popular as a healthier alternative to black tea. Similar to green tea, it is jam-packed with anti-oxidants which help fight cancer, and lower cholesterol. White tea is often a toss up however as it has less natural caffeine than green tea, but sachets tend to have sugar in them. If you buy white tea, buy loose leaf for the most benefit.

Red rooibos tea is the most commonly drank tea in Africa, and is also slowly growing in popularity, especially in North America. Rooibos, while not actually a tea, when steeped makes for an amazing beverage. Rooibos is naturally sweet, and so it doesn’t need sugar additives, has no caffeine, and no tannins. If you can find this wonderful tea you should definitely try it out as it stands tall and proud as the most healthy tea, with more anti-oxidants than either green or white tea! A recent Japanese study also shows that Rooibos may help to combat allergies! If you can find it in loose leaf all the better, check your local tea shop or google for Rooibos. If you can find it also try out green rooibos, which is even better than the red variety!

Don’t worry! I won’t tell you to kick the habit! For a long while, there was controversy about coffee, and many studies claimed it to be detrimental to a person’s health. This is only partially true, because recent studies show its not actually the coffee, but the caffeine which is detrimental when consumed in adverse amounts.

So, the easy fix? Switch to decaff. Studies show that coffee comes with a slew of benefits, such as antioxidants and polyphenols (which fight cancer). Swiss scientists also recently found that the antioxidants in coffee get absorbed by nasty LDL particles. What does this mean? Well the LDL particles are 20% less likely to form into heart clogging plaque. The problem is that the caffeine actually nullifies the body’s ability to absorb the cancer fighting polyphenols.

So why is caffeine painted as such a horrible thing? Well, caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, the cardiac muscle, and the respiratory system, and acts as a diuretic. It inhibits the body’s ability to absorb and use polyphenols which fight cancer, and cause problems in the areas of the body that is stimulates. However caffeine is generally alright in small doses, but over consumption is where the real problem comes into play. People who over consume caffeine will often experience irritability, sleeplessness, irregular heartbeat, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, or loss of appetite. Women who are pregnant are advised to drink as little caffeine as possible because it can cause still birth or birth defects.

Have a healthy day /fit/,
I’ll try to bring you something non food related next time.

A side note about black tea: for some reason it is really healthy for your teeth and can help whiten them. Gargling with it and swishing it around over the teeth in your mouth is good for your dental health/whiteness.

Red rooibos is the best possible tea for you.
Decaff is better for you than caffeinated.
And Caffeine is alright in small doses but should be avoided if you're a preggo-chan.

I'd assume its relative to the tannins in the tea, which aren't good for your digestive track, but are probably fairly effective at killing bacteria.

I go through tea stages, and right now I drink mass amounts of green tea. My favorite tea types are green, chai, and black. I don't usually drink rooibos because it's not the easiest thing to find in my hick city.

So what are the health benefits of chai, and herbal teas?

Herbals are great. As stated, Rooibos isn't actually a type of tea, its actually herbal, but its marketed as a tea.

Herbal beverages tend to be better for you. For instance pine-tea is fantastic for you and contains not only lots of anti-oxidants, but also vitamin c. It has some natural sugars, and isn't caffeinated.

Decaf sucks. I need caffeine to wake up in the morning. I can't change that, but I should probably switch to decaf for the rest of the day?

Caffeinated first thing in the morning is probably fine. It'd probably also kick start your metabolism so why not. But the rest of the day you should probably switch to decaff.

White tea is awesome, if you haven't tried it you should. The flavor is really smooth, not bitter at all like green tea can be.

Ya I really like white tea, its the same thing with Rooibos. Rooibos tastes sort of nutty but is smooth, and the longer you steep it, the better it tastes.

Green tea contains only small amounts of the healthy stuff inside it, when drank. You have to buy Green Tea Extract, in pills or something similar to really get anything out of drinking it. Supposedly, it helps metabolize fat.

Drink orange juice.

31901 here, I meant you have to take pills to really get the effects you would from drinking mass amounts of green eta.

Haven't heard of Rooibos, will look into it

Using ethyl acetate to decaffeinate tea, which is a very common method, destroys the majority of the catechin polyphenols in the tea.

The decaff is better than caffeinated, was mostly directed at Coffee.

Gotcha. In that case I would agree with you.
Good post by the way. I'll have to check out red rooibos.

OP, if you get fresh coffee (not the shit you buy at a store)
its actually a naturally sweet drink. If you get it in a week or less from the source it would taste nothing like the crap that they sell at stores.
