hello /fit/ i have some food questions

- i thought beans were off limit because they're starchy but do the protein benefits outweigh that? i'm a femanon trying to lose weight, and not bulk up, so i'm not sure if i need to be as protein-seeking as you brahs out there.

- instant oats vs. OATZ. is there a difference? what if i get the instant oats with no flavoring?

- how does kashi hot cereal compare to regular oats nutrition-wise? can i eat either or should i stick to oats?

- obviously whole wheat pasta is healthier than the normal kind, but i should still only eat it in smaller portions, right?
>> Anonymous
if it were up to me, i wouldn't eat anything you listed only because i'm in the average persons mind a fucking crazy mother fucker bent on destroying the human race with his eating ideals

but i suggest not getting instant oats as they are more processed, and because they are more processed the less complex the carbs get and therefore a higher insulin spike when you eat them.

beans are alright in moderation (as is anything), i wouldn't eat too many but if you must eat them then go for garbanzo/kidney/black beans

for pasta, it's not worth it to eat it. sure it's cheap and looks good, there's just so many carbs that you'd mine as well be eating candy. again if you must eat it then try to portion it as small as you can

i eat pasta like 4 nights a week and i can't put on weight
>> Anonymous
thanks for the help anon, i'm all up for batshit human seeking nutrition ideals, so what kind of stuff do you usually eat?

i guess i'll be cutting out beans/pasta, not a huge loss. i wish i had asked you guys before i bought all this instant oatmeal though...oh well.

That was my shopping list yesterday, most of the time it's around 30-40 dollars but I had to do my semi-annual spice rack revamp, but i also buy a lot of macadamia nuts, walnuts, and pecans

Along with that I buy all grassfed meats from http://www.grasslandbeef.com, i buy ground bison, ground beef, bison shoulder cut, chicken culets, grassfed butter, grassfed bacon, grassfed colby and monterey jack cheeses, and polish grassfed sausages.

I get all my eggs locally from a friend who has a bunch of chickens roam free around his ranch, so they're quite good.

it's hard to say how much I spend weekly or monthly on food, but i would say it's around 250-300 a month, which I believe isn't that much

>250-300 a month, which I believe isn't that much

thats more than i spend on rent.
congrats for eating right.
fuck you for having so much money.

PRIORITIZE

cut out the other shit in your diet so you can do it as listed. if you are really indeed that poor < 12000 a year, GTFO the internet and get a 2nd job/take classes.

no excuse for shitbaggery. i'm sure if anyone analyzed your spending habits, they'd easily find 100-200 a month of just shit, but shit 'dear to your heart' so you wont axe it to live better.

>i'm sure if anyone analyzed your spending habits, they'd easily find 100-200 a month of just shit, but shit 'dear to your heart' so you wont axe it to live better.
I actually asked the question for Mr. 368905 up there. I'm very good with my money, and had no real desire to know what you had to say.
>> Anonymous
>>368926
Mr. 368905 here. little confused-are you asking me what ajustments i would make for the poorer among us-or giving me a lecture on how to live my life?
if the former; buy less expensive nice things. guess what, if you don't have money, you can't eat as good. if you can afford 300 dollars a month on food, good for you, but dammit i'm going to resent you. period.
if you're giving me a lecture; fuck off with your 'prioritize'. i'm broke, and the thought has occasionally occured to me that i should optimise my expenses. I DON'T HAVE 200 FUCKING DOLLARS KNOCKING AROUND YOU PATRONISING SHIT. and as for;
>TFO the internet and get a 2nd job/take classes
paying my ass through college.
inb4 daddy should have paid for it. rich prick.
>> Anonymous
ok you 'woes unto me' assholes

this isnt rocket science

if you cant afford the nicest thing, move down a notch to the things you can afford

ie. grassfed organic bison-->grassfed beef-->normal hormone filled crap

WHY CANT YOU FIGURE THAT OUT ON YOUR FUCKING OWN?? WHY MUST YOU ASK THIS AND GET INTO INTERNET WARS?
i'd feel like quite the sucker if i had to pay for my own education and wound up getting what you got...
>> Anonymous
I get the cheapest shit I can at the supermarket. Paying double the price for 'organic' this or 'natural' that is stupid.
>> Anonymous
instant oats and oats - not a big difference but i would rather even get regular oats because instant taste disgusting (plain)
>> Anonymous
>>368955
er...dude..i didn't ASK anything. its not my fucking thread and i'm not mr 368910.
i just posted because i think you're an arrogant, stupid dickspot. If you really think telling people to >move down a notch to the things you can afford
is even worth your time to type, you either have an extremely overblown sense of your own wisdom, or you're a very recently recovered moron who never had to spend a cent of their own money.
also, the whole world is not upper-middle class. guess what; i can't buy grassfed organic bison OR grassfed beef- the hormonal crap is for people like me who
1. haven't the luxury of choosing the quality of their food
2. are intelligent enough to realise that COW hormones that have been denatured in a FRYING PAN are unlikely to be too much of a problem to HUMAN consumption.

eat what you like man, what gets me is your assumption that everyone could eat like you do, and whoever doesn't is stupid.

>i'd feel like quite the sucker if i had to pay for my own education and wound up getting what you got...

well that makes a whole bunch of sense. especially considering i'm STILL in education-so i've GOT nothing. yet.
inb4 i make the drugs that may (or may not) cure your cancer.

tell people they are stupid for buying organic or pasturefed is stupid

conventional beef (which is fed corn, silage, crushed cow bones, their own shit on occasion) has omega 6 to omega 3 ratios upwards of 20:1, and if you don't know the effects of omega 6 and omega 3 are then you probably don't care.

pasturefed beef has omega 6 to omega 3 ratios of 2:1 or 3:1, i don't know about you but if i'm going to spend my money on food id rather it help me than kill me faster.

"Deficiencies have been associated with asthma, heart disease and learning deficiencies." (When you have too little Omega-3)
"This disruption can result in increased tendency to form blood clots, inflammation, high blood pressure, irritation of the digestive tract, depressed immune function, sterility, cell proliferation, cancer and weight gain." (When you have Insanely high Omega 6-Omega 3 ratios, beyond 10-1 which most Americans trump 2 fold)

first, lrn2 english before you bark your gibberish at me.

most importantly, i tend to keep my whining to myself (after all, unless i fuck my education up, it should be better for me in the long run).
i just tend to rage a bit when i get financial advice from a basement-dwelling ubernerd, especially the kind of advice that any sane person figured out before they got their first paper-round.

besides, read what said >eat what you like man, what gets me is your assumption that everyone could eat like you do, and whoever doesn't is stupid

i whine because anon is an entitled little asshole. not becasue i'm making a personal sacrifice that will eventually leave me richer-and happier- for it.

you are silly and foolish if the burden to prove the benefits of Omega-3 rich diet lies on a random person before you will believe it.

if you are too lazy and retarded to already know the difference, you will enjoy the 'rewards', and so will I, because i work in the cardiac rehab field and i love buying nice things with your money

My typical source of grain is "Crisp bread"
It's a modern hardtack. It sounds appalling, yes, but I think it's a miracle.

It consists of ground grains (rye usually), water, salt, and leavening I think yeast.

It's cheap, I don't think it can go bad before ~3 months, it's easy to eat, and it's just whole grains. I stock up on 3-4 boxes and it lasts weeks.

Pic is not my brand but they're pretty much all exactly the same.

i guess i was qrong about you; you're clearly just stupid.
>the burden to prove the benefits of Omega-3 rich diet lies on a random person before you will believe it

er no retard, the burden lies upon a peer supported scientific study made by unbiased experts in that feild. since you probably unaware of what that means, it menas 'lots of clever people who agree with each other, research this thing for a living aren't trying to sell it to you'. so yeah, a random person.
>i work in the cardiac rehab field and i love buying nice things with your money

lets just break this down shall we? cardiac rehab? on 4chan- i'm guessing, at best, you're a care worker. probably, a nurse. either case, you have no money (and me getting heart disease-unlikely given my excellent health-will not give you any money since i subscribe to a free health care system, and last time i checked, nurses didn't get paid on a 'per patient quota').
in fact you flagrant lack of knowledge of the healthcare system leads me to believe you're just bullshitting, and are, in fact, 12.
finnally, you assume that every comatose who's shitty ass you sponge had their infarction dude to a lack of omega 3? wow. what proof? what indication do you have for this? and what expertise do you have that you need to google for any source to refute me with.
tl,dr; you're a moron and you hide it badly.

>>369075
how did my post imply you should BELIEVE strangers? i implied the BURDEN of proof and understanding lies in your own lap. pubmed is great if you have access. omega3 research is still relatively in its 'infancy' if you will, but, asshole, if you any conceptual understanding of CVD, a disease of inflammation, you will find the correlation of lessening 'inflammation' with the lessening of CVD in what ever measures your are testing for.

Omega3 usage has also been linked w/ reducing inflammation.

also to note, as made by wise anon above, the RATIO of omega3s to omega 6s.

here, some PEER REVIEWED JOURNALS (u fucktard) THAT YOU CAN ACCESS

O'Keefe JH Jr, Cordain L, Jones PG, Abuissa H. Coronary artery disease prognosis and C-reactive protein levels improve in proportion to percent lowering of low-density lipoprotein. Am J Cardiol. 2006 Jul 1;98(1):135-9.

Loren Cordain, S. Boyd Eaton, Anthony Sebastian, Neil Mann, Staffan Lindeberg, Bruce A. Watkins, James H. O’Keefe, Janette Brand Miller. Origins and evolution of the western diet: Health implications for the 21st century. Am J Clin Nutr 2005;81:341-54.

on that last one, most specifically examine the issue of omega3 to omega6 ratio composition of the population along w/the rise of CVD in the popu.

enjoy.

i am also surprised at how badly you miss quoted me and by your 'personal character attacks,' which reflect yourself in relation to 4chan.

and how has your post helped the discussion?

where are YOUR sources FUCKTARD? i had mine up in 1minute. where are YOUR PEER REVIEWED CARDIAC JOURNALS to shoot down omega3's to shoot down that HEART DISEASE is related to INFLAMMATION??

where's the proof?

or will it just be the usual, PURE ad hominem attacks?

i guess i'm totally debased. i guess i'm a troll.

i title this picture "DONT LET THIS BE YOU"

very hollow victory
>> Anonymous
>>369101
ok, now you bring up sources. well done. perhaps the character attacks were a little uneccessary. however i did not misquote you (i just copied your text).
well how about the Journal of American Medecine; http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/short/295/4/403

or the FDA claiming that Omega 3 has mulitiple health RISKS (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ds-ltr11.html)
or maybe the british medical journal (http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/abstract/332/7544/752)
claiming (and i do quote correctly) "showed no effect of omega 3 on total mortality".
just a few, very quickly found sources to shed doubt on your claims. however as you said, omega 3 research is in its infancy, but its claims of health benefits have been massively overblown by profiteering nutritionists and food manufacturing companies, so i take what little research has been done with a pinch of salt.
i am, for one, willing to reserve my judgement and my money before i invest in dubious health claims and foodstuffs, but if you want to be easily frightened by claims of CVD then go ahead.
also-the only pharmacoloical response of omega 3 that i'm willing to concede absolutely (that is supporetd in both my and your sources) is a reduction in inflammation. however you imply that this is somehow massively important for treating CVD. that is a logical jump you cannot simply make with me. by that logic, ANY anti-inlammatory would be an effective treatment of CVD. please don't force me to refute that.
and the BURDEN of proof IS on those who claim a certain fact to be true, not those who observe and question.
ie NOT;
A: god exists
B; prove it
A no, you prove it
B oh gosh i guess you're right
>> Anonymous
just to clarify;
>where are YOUR PEER REVIEWED CARDIAC JOURNALS to shoot down omega3's to shoot down that HEART DISEASE is related to INFLAMMATION?

i never disputed that. however, i do dispute
CVD=inflammation
therefore
antiinflammatories=no CVD

as in
A=i have CVD
B=here, have some aspirin
A=that's my CVD fixed

>>369131
at no point do i imply that omega3s are the be all and end all. i said they are in research infancy, i know that. but based on the mixed research, things look promising.

at no point do i say 'sell the house and buy omegaz!'

they help against inflammation, and CVD is a disease of inflammation (even thats argued). BUT the research i put up done in anthropology and cardiac research show taht the ratio of omega3:6 is something that should be looked into further, and considering professionals who are much better than I get daily omega 3 dose, its a $1 a day 'donation' im willing to make to supplement companies.

and i stress this is a 'prevention' measure. to go hand in hand w/100s of other things from diet, exercise, etc.

if u are familar w/research, NOTHING is 'proven' per se, and all these studies 'show (prove) in their own way' that they are 'right' and deserve funding.

as such, with ALL these (often) contradictory research out there, the burden DOES lie in YOUR lap. no one can tell you the answer.
>> Anonymous
>>369136
>When life gives you 95 lemons, Throw them at old people!
>> Anonymous
>>369155
i guess when it comes down to it what we seem to disagree is where the burden of proof lies (we seem to disagree on many fine details of omega 3, however we both concede that many of the facts are disputed, and i guess arguing over them would be entirely fuitile).
ok fine, this is certainly an interesting avenue of research, however my 'donation' towards this research are my tax dollars. i will simply not buy supplements because a company has made (as yet) unfounded and unproven claims that they are beneficial.
whenever does this BURDEN of proof lie in my lap? if you are implying that i stand to loose by not taking appropriate care of myself, you have misunderstood the concept of conceptual proof. whether or not i live long is irrelevant, we are talking about scientific FACT, and whether i stand to gain/loose idf this happens to be true does not put any burden on me; someone else has made a claim about a certain substance; omega 3. it is in THEIR hands to prove or make compelling an argument to confirm their statement is true. if not, i will ignore it, and continiue to live my life by my standard of understanding.
>no one can tell you the answer
if that is the case, research is meaningless, and all scientific research is pointless. of course someone can tell me the answer, thats why people research things.
it is of course in my interests to seek sound nutritional advice, obviously, but to claim that it is my responsability to confirm annother man's claim is nonsensical. i hate to use the religion analogy, but that is appropriate; you must prove your god to me-it is not my perogative to disprove yours'

ps-sorry about the rage. i try to keep that shit to /b/, but its been a long day.
