Hey /fit/,

I'm 19 years old, 6'2" and weigh 185~ pounds. I wouldn't call myself gigantic by any means, but over the last year or so I've gained a decent sized gut. I've related this to a lack of physical activity, as my diet is fairly good, and that is really the only thing that has changed for me over the last few years. I've tried working out a little bit and using a rowing machine every day for 30-45 minutes, and I'm not really seeing any results at all.

Basically, I don't know what the fuck I'm doing. I've never been big on sports or weight lifting or anything like that. I think the only reason I stayed in shape for so long was because I used to ride a bike every day, all day.

Anyway, would anyone mind directing me to some resources where I could kind of get started, or just give me some pointers? As I said, I have no fucking clue what I'm doing and there is so much information on the internet that I don't know what is good or bad, what works and what doesn't, etc.

OP here:

Pic isn't related, but I don't have a camera and that is the best picture I could find that gives the general idea of my gut and chest.

I'll break some things down for you because Venuto's book can be a bit confusing to the beginner.

First things first, the main component in stripping fat off of your body is going to be a tight, high protein diet - cardio helps, but is not essential, good news if you hate cardio.

http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=1526539 This author writes good articles dealing with fat loss, and I agree with what he says. You want to tighten up your nutrition and find a comfortable number of calories to eat per day whilst raising metabolic rate through weight lifting.

Don't be discouraged if you can't fit in 6 meals a day, it's ideal, but also not necessary.

Everything else is fairly simple. Eat clean foods, maintain a large hypocaloric state for the most part, lift weights and eat your protein, and you'll be well on your way. Don't get discouraged, this takes a lot of time.

Keep with the rowing, but don't just sit on it and row for 30 mins. Make sure you sometimes to more intense sessions. 3x10 mins will raise your metabolism and burn more energy that 1x30.
