It's fairly harmless. I mean, it was only banned in the 1930s or so, and that was mostly for racist reasons, similar as to why cocaine was banned. They called it by its Mexican name on purpose to attach a stigma to the drug, because everyone hated Mexicans at the time.
Minor history lesson aside, weed makes you act like a completely annoying shithead. I've been on both ends of it. It's always fun when you are high, but any sober people near you will just plain hate you because you won't stop laughing or doing stupid shit. The only real adverse effects are potentially lowered testosterone...there's lots of fearmongering about how it destroys your brain and shit, but there's no real hard evidence supporting that weed has any long term negative effects.
It's amazing to get high if you're in pain, though. You'll forget about anything from a sprained ankle to a gunshot wound. It's a mega painkiller.
Like any fun thing, it's very easy to overdo it. It's more of a mental/emotional addiction, as weed has no physically addicting properties, unlike coke or heroine or nicotine. But, look at how many people have food or video gaming addictions...if you let weed fill a void in your life, it can very easily take you over. You need to be responsible and do it in moderation.
I used to smoke off and on. Generally avoid it now because my job does random tests...and I got fucking hardcore munchies all the time, so it didn't help my diet at all. Plus, I got a lot of headaches from pot. Still, it's EXTREMELY fun sometimes, get stoned with a few friends and play video games or blast music. Unless you're REALLY undisciplined, I'd recommend everyone try it once. Sex, music, food, movies...just about everything is more fun on weed. It heightens your senses and just makes you feel fucking happy.
