Drink a lot of water. Water helps to hydrate your body and it has no calories. If you do drink fizzy soda/pop, then I'd cut those out. They have a massive amount of sugar in them!
On top of all that, make sure you exercise. You don't have to do two hours on a treadmill or a hundred press ups. Start at a pace that suits you, then slowly aim higher. If you do ten minutes on a treadmill or on a run one day, aim for fifteen the next time, until you can feel yourself really being pushed.
I'm really not sure on this but to lose weight, you have to be doing cardio. Aim for 40 minutes at least 3 times a week but like I said, don't push it at first if you really can't do it. No reason to slack off though! If you're not sweating, you're not pushing hard enough. Even if it feels like you're dying!
Weight lifting can also be beneficial. A trainer once told me that it can burn as many calories as cardio can, once your heart beat is up.
Overall, try and enjoy your exercise. Think of a realistic goal and aim for it. If you don't want to weigh yourself, just measure yourself. Take pictures of yourself now and every week that you're taking action. It will help to motivate you when you really can't be bothered to go for a run or turn down that chocolate bar.
Don't expect a chance after a week or two. You have to stick by it. But once it starts, you'll get into a schedule, feel great and you'll want to keep going.
Also, get some music for your exercise. It helps a lot.
Like I said, I'm not an expert and I'm sure someone will pull this apart but it's just advice that I've picked up over the past year or so.
Good luck and I hope you reach your goal.
