I kickbox (southpaw), and recently I've started trying to utilize my left high kicks more. Unfortunately, it seems like every time I spar a taller opponent and try them they end up being awkward and without power or I end up off-balance. I don't think it's an issue of flexibility, since I've got a 170 degree range of motion, and I never have trouble kicking at head height or higher with power on the heavybag, so it's not an issue of technique. Maybe high kicks just don't work on opponents that're taller than you? Or am I just missing something here?

Do you aim for the temple, neck, or jaw? Personally, I like the kick to the neck. It's easier to strike with the shin, hence you hit harder. Also, if you're as flexible as you say you are you should have no problem cutting downward for extra power.

See pic for what I mean by cutting downward.

Well you're going in the right direction if you are studying crocop. My suggestion is to to find someone at your gym who is taller than you, and just keep practicing. The main inhibitor for my kicks has been breathing during fights. I have been kicking with full lungs which during fights seem to expand or something strange and when I go for a kick it's always lower than I expect and I compress my chest by bringing my leg up crushing my lungs which are full. I always make sure I take several deep breaths and on the full exhale I kick. Has helped me enormously. Try that out.

Other than that, get a sparring partner who is alot taller to hold a heavy rectangular pad shield on their right side with both arms and practice hitting on that. Make sure that if you do get the kick down you then start to practice the kick completely out of breath and after a series of punches. I generally go right straight left hook Right kick yours would be reversed I guess.

Do aim for the neck as your opponent will likely try to duck or lower his head and you can catch him in the temple. When you get better you can learn to kick over and bring down through his guard.

Should help slightly..
