Hey there, /fit/

I'm 19, 5'1 and female. Long story short, I've been overweight since always, but never bothered weighing nor concerning myself. A few months ago, I finally did and found myself at 149. I was amazed because I really didn't think I look it at all.

Since that point, I decided I really need to lose weight before my ignorance lets it get out of control. I watch what I eat (which was never anything that bad to begin with until college) and keep a log of my calorie intake. I've been drinking only water, usually have half or a whole bagel for breakfast (no butter or whatnot), an apple and snack bars through the day for snacks and a frozen meal for dinner (I aim for the ones with the least fat I can get). However, my calorie intake is 500 some days and 1300 others.

I've also been working out a bit. My cardio is limited...my parents don't feel comfortable with the idea of me jogging out in my neighborhood at night (it's Arizona and I'm especially sensitive to heat and got bedridden last time I was out in the sun for too long). Mostly, I lift weights, do crunches and squats. I heard working out at least helps with metabolism (which is my main problem, opposed to overeating). Whenever I visit home, I hop on the treadmill before I do my work out.

Here are my questions (next post):
>> Anonymous
1. Should I work harder on avoiding frozen meals? As a student, I always go for the quickest thing I can eat and I'm concerned this will negatively effect my efforts. If I should, what are easy, quick meals I could substitute them with?

2. What should I aim for my calorie intake? What are some healthy snacks to help me boost healthy calorie intake without boosting fat intake? I know fruits, but I've been getting tired of apples and I don't like most fruits other than apples. I want to find more variety so that I don't burn myself out on one food.

3. Is there another way to get a good cardio workout without having to run? At the moment, DDR is the best I can do (and personally, I think it works very nicely, but I can't DDR as much as I want to). Come summer, I'll be staying with my parents in a much safer neighborhood, but I want to get as much cardio as I can until then. I'm thinking...jumping rope or jumping jacks? How long would I do these activities for?

4. It's been two months and I've lost about 14 pounds (assuming I am 135 now). However, the scale seems to change from 133 one day and jump to 138 the next day to 135 the next. Is this just water weight or is my weight really fluctuating that much?

5. Is 14 pounds in two months slow? How much loss a week should I aim for? I feel like maybe I should be working harder and losing it faster and it's making me feel less confident about my efforts.

6. Is there any way to boost metabolism even more?

7. My arms and calves are very muscular (don't ask me why because I don't know). Of course, when they aren't flexing, they look fat. Is there anything I can do about this? Is there any way to make my muscles smaller (sounds stupid, I know)? My calves, when flexed, were even bigger than my last boyfriend, who was a work out freak, so it was kind of awkward...

Finally,
Thanks in advance! And just to let you know: it was /fit/ that really inspired me and gave me the confidence to do something about my weight, so I am very grateful for this board.

That will help you find your caloric needs.

As for 7lbs/month, that's not bad, that's quite decent.

At some point you'll need to do something other than just DDR. Your body will plateau and you'll need to run, job, EFX, assmaster, or something so your body wont adapt.

Is that you in teh picture? You're not overweight

can you post some before pictures?

Yes. I didn't think I looked 150 either, but I'm guessing a bit of the weight is from muscle from when I used to dance.

>>84113
This is "before."

7 pounds per month is fast as fuck when you're a 5'1 woman. be smart about this.

lose 15 pounds over the next 6 months. this will make dieting a lot more bearable and realistic to maintain. what you're looking for is a lifestyle change, not a one-time drop (and probably rebound) in weight.

if you diet too quickly, your already crap metabolism will crash completely. metabolism is largely a function of muscle mass, of which you have little (seriously. don't argue this point. I don't care that you squat.)

avoid frozen shit. eat what you can grow and kill. make more active choices on a daily basis.

I think you'll be much more happy this way.

Do you eat 5 or 6 small meals a day? That speeds up metabolism. Also, lots of fiber keeps things moving.

Never go as low as 500. NEVER. Yes, it cuts the calories down so you end up losing one lb in three days, but it will kill your metabolism no matter what excercise you do.

I know this from experience: my weight has yo-yo'ed from 103lbs to 125lbs to 107lbs to 149 lbs to my current 115lbs because of illnesses and not eating right and it's not a cycle I want to keep repeating.

>>84129
I'm not really sure what constitutes a meal. I'd say about three on average. If I divide this up into more meals, how far apart should they be spread?

>>84130
Yes.

>>84141
I had taken the picture for someone to show off my new belt.

you look fine and not over weight at all. if all that weight is from muscle then you really don't need to go about losing any of it. as long as you are fit, i say keep doing what you're doing. the numbers don't mean anything if all isn't from fat.

you will need to post nudez b4 i can help you

You divide your total caloric need into six. Say you are going to do six meals at 200 calories each. So, you eat six 200 calorie servings. Space them apart 1.5 to 3 hours and don't snack in between.

There are guides out there about varying the caloric size of your meals based on the time of day. It has something to do with insulin balance and shit. It's also a good thing to eat lots in the morning and eat little in the evening. I hate counting calories, though. Bottom line, eat healthy and exercise, the rest will follow. There's no use stressing about a few pounds.

you really dont look fat at all

I guess I'm a "nobodies perfect everyone has their deficiencies" type

but then again, the minute I start looking fat I start feeling bad so fuck it.

about the only advice I can give to a girl is, the shorter you are the more careful you should be about weight

I'm kinda in the same predicament anyhow, since I need to lose some weight also, so these responses might somehow come in handy.

1. TV dinners are ass terrible, but at the same time options as a starving college student are sadly limited. Try eating stuff like sandwiches(grilled cheese, tuna, traditional turkey), baked potatoes, cereal/skim milk(any time is a good time for cereal) whenever you can. Buy a shitton of fruit and snack liberally on it. I like to buy bananas and kiwis in bulk, they're good to eat frozen solid if you slice 'em thin.
2. Never under 1600. Any less and you fuck your metabolism, the weight loss ends up plateauing HARD, you'll generally feel like shit, the list goes on. As for snacking, branch out when you go shopping and try veggies and fruits that you haven't tried before. Also I tend to save a quarter of whatever I eat for full meals and snack on it later.
3. Beg your parents to buy you a gym membership. It's a safe place place to workout, and the presence of other people really motivates you to try your best. Call it a Christmas/birthday present, anything. Honestly I can't think of a much better way to spend money than on a well used gym membership. Treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical machines, stairmasters, usually a pool for swimming, there are countless options for cardio at the gym, you'll never get bored. Who knows, you might snag a buff guy if you're looking for some lovin', lol.
4&5. Two pounds a week is the accepted healthy limit to weight loss, so you're right on track there. If you were losing more I would be worried and suggest you either curtail your diet/routine or visit a physician. Don't weigh yourself every day, it just adds unnecessary stress and the daily number means absolutely nothing. The fluctuation could be anything from water weight, whatever you have in your stomach at that exact moment, what clothes you're wearing, how long you've been awake that day, the list goes on. Weigh yourself at the end of every week if you must, every two weeks would probably be better.
>> Anonymous
6. This shouldn't really be a concern, stick to the basic tried-and-true method and ignore anything that sounds like a shortcut. Just try to eat well as your options permit, and exercise at least half an hour every day. Your efforts will definitely pay off if you can stick to it.
7. Lay off on the weights and focus entirely on cardio if you don't like the muscles. Even the calf area will start to look leaner eventually. Hardcore runners are twig skinny.

FOCUS IS THE KEY, don't let yourself slip up on your routine even once. 99% of these routines don't fail because people do something wrong, they fail because the natural human response to hard(optional) work is to lolquit. Skipping a single routine doesn't effect much of anything, but it creates the precedent to skip more and more and more and suddenly you've just stopped completely. Don't create that crack in your foundation and be ruthless. Nothing short of leprosy, gunshot wound, sudden and violent shift of the world into a post-apocalyptic era via nuclear holocaust should keep you from the gym/ddr/jump roping/whatever.

Good luck!

I agree with anon. More meals per day will keep your metabolism firing on all cylinders. And drink lots of water. It shouldn't take you too long to get in shape if you work out at the gym. Free weights and compound movements will do the trick. Best of luck to you :) Although luck isn't really what you need. It's persistance.

Keep in mind, OP, treadmill running is different from actual running. You're cheating your hamstrings when you run on a treadmill, because the belt is pulling yor foot back, as opposed to you pushing off. People also tend to land harder on the treadmill, increasing impact in your joints.

If you are looking to do anything over 3 miles, I suggest you go get fitted for a running shoe, or have someone check you for pronation.

>1. Frozen Meals

Limit them as much as you can. once/twice week would be fine as long as enough cardio is done to compensate.

>2. Calorie Intake

Everyone has a certain range of maintainance calories needed to KEEP the body weight. I would guess your number is around 1600-1800. You should ALWAYS eat at least 1500 calories everyday. If you are exercising then a little more. Main thing about diet should that it's Balanced and contains all basic nutrients. 50% carbs, 30% Protein, 20% (healthy) Fats.

You Metabolism working best in the morning so have most of the carbs when your body needs the most. Don't forget to eat plenty of protein throughout the day, eggs, salmon/tuna, beans, skim milk, nuts etc.
>> Anonymous
Don't listen to these idiots. Starvation works. 500 calories a day is actually a little much for someone so short. Maybe try to hit 300 and make them light snacks like 100 cal popcorn bags and liquidy stuff like fat free yogurt. Smoke a lot because smoking keeps your metabolism up AND curbs hunger.

If you ever get hungry after your calorie limit, go for tons of ice water or diet pepsi.

Spend lots of time walking. Don't run or jog, cause walking takes longer. It makes it easy to forgot about food if you spend a few hours walking plus you burn tons of calories. Wear a heavy windbreaker or something to induce extra sweating.

Do this and I guarantee you will be at 100 pounds in about a month.

The problem is that /fit/ is a bunch of self-righteous tools who don't understand that looking good is more important than being "healthy". Fuck healthy. If people cared about healthy, there wouldn't be a modeling industry and tons of hot girls on California's beaches.

Really, though, I do feel sorry for you right now. 150 pounds at your height is seriously obese. The only way it would be ok to weigh that much as a girl would be if you were like 6'5". Ultimate goal should be between 85 and 90 pounds.

This post is possibly better than the Arnold Copy Pasta.

1. Avoid frozen, pre-packaged shit. A good way to avoid it is prepare your food for the next day in advance. Boil chicken/vegetables/healthy things in advance then throw them in the fridge. Then all you've to do is reheat it in the microwave.

2. Meal replacement shakes/bars. Also, I eat a lot of shit that I don't particularly like because it's good for me and conducive to more muscle. Suck it up.

3. Jump rope. If you've a stopwatch or something, time yourself for 3-5 rounds of 2-3min, with 30-60sec breaks between rounds. Whipped me into fighting shape faster than anything.

4. Water weight. Your weight will fluctuate throughout the day, as well as day to day.

5. Worry about how you look in the mirror, not on the scale.

6. Squats, deadlifts, cleans, etc. Just lifting weight and gaining muscle will up your metabolism.

7. Cankles. Get a good vertical leap and blame them on that.

Also, tits, please.

You're full of shit. If you starve yourself, you're going to go into starvation mode in which your body stores fat. Once this happens, yes, you might be skinny for a while, but you will also gain back all of the weight and it will be twice as hard losing it again.

Smoking? Enjoy your cancer.

>Wear a heavy windbreaker or something to induce extra sweating.

Your body will store fat more than before. Starving to lose body fat is a bad idea no matter how you look at it.
>> Anonymous
>>84434

Which is why you starve in order to have very little calories to store as fat. Idiot. I do it. It works. I could have wasted my time waiting years for a body with gym crap, but I chose the harder way. My way takes loads more discipline, but you get results faster. Makes sense, right?

But, yeah, keep stuffing your fat mouth with 2000 cals a day. Just because you are so weak willed you can't hit 200 cals per day like I can is no reason to flame me.

If I was a camwhore, wouldn't I have posted a picture without clothes? Which I understand would be more relevant to my problems, but I am not comfortable doing (not for weight reasons, but because I have a boyfriend).

Don't worry, I'm not an idiot and I don't plan to starve myself (nor intend to only have 500 calories a day whenever I do). I never have that much of an appetite and usually eat when I'm bored (I used to have the habit of forgetting to eat as well). However, I do want to be able to maintain a healthy weight without having to stick to a major diet my entire life, so I am going to aim for more calories a day.

Thanks for the (helpful) responses so far.
