/fit/, I'm having trouble with my total calorie intake.

I'm 6'1, I weigh 160 lbs and I'm 16 years old.
According to the BMR formula, my BMR is 1881
I have a lightly active lifestyle so by multiplying my BMR by 1.375, I get 2,586. In order to MAINTAIN weight, I need to consume the aforementioned amount. In order to loose I need to subtract 500 calories a day from that amount to loose pound per week. And to gain, vice versa, etc..

I don't get it - Shouldn't I subtract 500 from my BMR directly to loose weight? Why would I need another extra 500 added to it to MAINTAIN weight? Wouldn't that make me gain weight? What purpose does the BMR serve, then?

I just don't get how it works, can anyone explain?

Also, does it sound right? In order too loose weight/pound per week I need to consume 2,086 calories.

It may just be my past experiences but that's a pretty hefty amount.

Any advice, too?

Well, the formula I used is the Harris Benedict Equation:

English BMR Formula
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )

Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year )

Metric BMR Formula
Women: BMR = 655 + ( 9.6 x weight in kilos ) + ( 1.8 x height in cm ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )

Men: BMR = 66 + ( 13.7 x weight in kilos ) + ( 5 x height in cm ) - ( 6.8 x age in years )

Now, you can just type it into google to get a quick answer. Now to calculate your total calorie needs you multiply the following to your BMR:

Sedentary -1.2
Lightly Active - 1.375
Moderately Active -1.55
Very Active - 1.725
Extra Active - 1.9

Now, from that amount, you need to subtract 500 in order to loose weight.
To gain, you add 500.
To maintain, eat your total calorie intake.

Subtracting and adding 500 would make you gain/loose weight in about a week.

Well, it had to happen sometime.

No, the BMR is not the # you subtract 500 from; you use the modified number with the "activity multiplier".

BMR is what you burn if you're sleeping all day long or in a coma. Going below that is unsafe and will screw you up because your body will go into starvation mode and burn off everything _but_ fat.
