Hey /fit/, 19 years old and I have a shin splints problem. It pisses me off because my shins burn so much after a mile that I have to stop walking around the track lot sooner than I want to (I'm never out of breath when I need to break, it's always the legs). Still, out of fear I'll push too hard and hurt something permanently, I only walk two miles with a lengthy break in-between miles for the pain to completely go away.

There's plenty of solutions on the internet, I know, but I want your opinions too. What do you think the best way to deal with/hopefully get rid of shin splints is? I only started this walking program (and discovered the shin problem) a week ago, so is it possible I can just wait it out with regular exercise? Whatever I have to do, I just don't want to have to give up walking as an exercise... I love doing it, I plan to walk with a friend, the track is very accessible, etc.

Try getting some shoes built for cushioniness (and obviously biometrically fit to your feet). Shin splints are basically that front muscle absorbing a lot more shock than they're used to taking, so reducing shock in any way can help.

A lower cost alternative is to try tippietoeing -- not to the full extent, just land on the front of your foot instead of the back. That way your calfs take the shock, which they're MUCH better at doing.

I think you're maybe still too heavy for your shins to properly support your weight. Try biking to shake off some pounds first.

try running on something softer
maybe an indoor track or grass or something

first off what shoes are you wearing? are you using the Nike Free shoes? Those are really good for your legs but they make you work too much. only use it for like the first 10 minute. You want a shoes with a lot of padding. I got shin splint when i first started serious running now im good and i can run much more than beforew
