Can we turn this into a general "squat form" thread? I have a few nagging questions.

1. I know how important it is to keep your weight off your toes and on your heels, but what if I feel comfortable just balancing my weight across my whole foot? That seems like the most natural way for me.

2. I know Rippetoe is a big advocate of "hip drive", and he almost advocates kicking your ass off the ground at the start of your drive up. But I saw a pretty convincing squat rx video where he said that this kind of motion can quickly turn a squat into a Good Morning, which makes sense. What does /fit/ recommend? If I don't use a lot of hip drive and just push up with my legs, it seems to work my quads a lot more, but if I use some hip drive, I can squat a bit heavier, I find.

stick with the hip drive. If you keep strict technique you won't have to worry about your squat turning into a good morning. just keep practicing.

Ok, I'll give it a shot:

1) You're not balancing exclusively on you heels, IIRC it's more like 30% of your weight is on your toes. A good way to get the hang of this is to curl your toes up into the top of your shoes when squatting, while keeping the balls of the feet and heels on the ground. YOu'll kind of naturally balance out.

2) Hip drive is in addition to raising your torso at the same time. The bar never is at the same level as your hips, like SquatRX said it then turns into a good morning if you're not careful. If that happens you're using too much weight in the first place. So, if you hold the bar onto your lower traps and rear delts, keep your upperback and core tight, you shouldn't have a problem with them turning into Good mornings.

Haha oh wow, some people actually answered you. Not trying to be a dick, but this is this first time in a while I saw someone be helpful with weight training. Yall must have really missed /fit/ to be this nice.
