Fatty-ish here. 6"2 and 230lbs.

Having recently noticed how much weight I've gained over the past few months (a killer beer belly and the beginnings of a double chin were the hints) I've decided to start exercising properly. I dont own any weights, I'm too poor to buy any (this also includes a gym pass) but I do have access to a bike and lots of road.
I was planning on riding my bike around 10mile 3-4 times a week and then fitting in some kind of situp/pushup/etc regimen around that. How efficient/inefficient is this for losing weight, ideally 30-40lbs of flab initially. Diet isnt a problem (it was, but due to negligence rather than being too much a weak willed faggot) as I've already cut out all the crap and drink around 2-4ltrs of water a day.

So how long can I expect the initial weight loss to take?

It would seem your prospects are slowly looking up.

30-40 pounds is a lot. Biking probably won't get the job done well. I realize that you're a big bigger than normal, but after a couple weeks of biking (just go as MUCH as you possibly can), switch to running. It's harder, and therefore will burn more fat. Also, your weight loss may look bad in the first month or two, as you will be building muscle (and a LOT) at the same time. Don't lose hope.

When at the running stage, if you are still pretty big, I'd switch days of biking and running, so you can let your joints take it easy. Also, bike EVERYWHERE if you don't run.

Also, change your eating habits. Have a big, good, healthy breakfast, then go burn it off. Eat well for the rest of the day, try not to graze but take a small portion (VERY small. Food guide small.) every time you get hungry, just enough to put you over for a couple hours. At first this will be hard and you'll get hungry often, but push through it a little and your stomach will start demanding less and less. Don't eat after the point at which you are going to sleep in four hours.

Also, get a sports team.

Thanks Anon. Gonna get up tomorrow about 5am and go cycling, hopefully it'll be cooler and there will be less traffic/people to laugh at my poor level of fitness.

Easily. Assuming you're not an idiot and know what your BMR is and how to plan your diet around it its very easily achievable to lose 30-40lb in 5 months, if not more if you dont piss around in your comfort zone. Check your weight after a few weeks.

You are doing good. Less food and excercise should allow you to lose an average of 2 pounds each week.
