Am I kidding myself, /fit/? Anonymous
I have a deformity in my hips / knees that makes it difficult (and sometimes painful) to do too much activity with my legs. I can keep my balance walking if I keep moving, but I fall over if I have to stand 'correctly' for more than a minute or so.

But... I've always wanted to do sports. My physical therapist gave me the OK to do some exercise outside our sessions, and I was thinking about taking up fencing. Not on a team or anything... I don't think I'd be able to keep up... but would it be overkill if I still tried to do it, as long as I kept my own pace?

I've never been able to do sports before, so I'm not sure how bad it'd affect me, and I'd quit right away if I started to hurt myself. Fencing doesn't seem like it's as high-impact as some other sports, though.

Any fencers here think they could give me an idea what it's like? I think I could keep up with it if I keep moving, but do you think I'd be able to learn the correct stances / etc.?

Well, fencing is all about balance... maybe not a good choice if you have trouble balancing.

Swimming might be a good option.

fencing is an athletic, highly explosive sport at the higher echelons. although due to the populations it attracts (rich aristocrats), they are often lazy or inbred. so if you have any of the proletarian heart in you, you will eat them for breakfast.

fencing is also expensive.

my coach was an olympic gold medalist and he charged a shitload. the stuff is expensive, the meets are also very expensive. this is to ensure it will be only a rich person/jew sport, and that none of the 'selectively bred super negros' will enter and beat everyone.

i played the 'american power style', which made my matches look like combat chess (ie. very sabre like in style for foil), although the more delicate and refined europeans would still own me w/technique.

Fencing will fuck you, especially if you have leg problems. It's not really high impact, but you can hurt yourself extremely easily.
Also, it's not the kind of sport you quit doing, because the equipment is fucking expensive.
