Eh, er...
I used to be pretty active (track/football), but recently have become extremely inactive. I'm now around 170lbs and 5'10. This is getting towards overweight, I'm not that bad but would like to lose around 10lbs.
Basically, since I don't do normal daily activies, I'm wondering if cardio (20-30 minutes a day; ellipitical trainer or stairs) in combination with a healthy diet would produce results?
And, how long would /fit/ estimate it would take to lose 10lbs?

45 minutes of light cardio 3-5 times a week = roughly 10lbs in 5 weeks.

If you're on a machine, just aim for 500 calories burned.

And yes, diet is of utmost importance whether you're trying to lose weight or not.

it should. but seriously though, your diet has to be spot-on to get the results you want. it should take you about 4-5weeks to lose 10 lbs with proper diet and exercise based on your current height and weight.

I appreciate the replies. As of right now I basically eat cereal (something like shreddies or cheerios) for breakfast, a salad for lunch, and a "normal" dinner (baked salmon, chicken).
For whatever reason the machine doesn't seem to be calculating anything, but it is fairly old. I've been thinking of investing in a treadmill.

treadmills are a good investment if you can afford the maintanance costs. otherwise, stay away. you can buy one of those calorie and heart rate monitors that you can strap to your arm when exercising. it isn't exactly super accurate but it should give you a ballpark idea of how much calories you're burning.

For diet, try to incorporate some lean meat/dairy proteins into every meal. For lunch, slice some chicken into your salad or somethin'. I could (and am tempted to) go into a whole diet plan, but the gist of it is to eat good protein every meal, eat healthy carbs (veggies, whole weat foods, etc), and to not undereat (you probably need around 2,400 calories a day, but take that figure with a grain of salt. So long as you do that stuff, you shouldn't have any trouble losing weight.
