Hey /fit/

I'm about 50-60 lbs overweight, ~250, 6'2", and looking to get in better shape this semester. I know extremely little (read: nothing) about health or weight loss. About a week ago, i saw someone link this site:

ExRx.net

And i started to do some research. A few days ago i took note about how many calories I had in a day and it was about 2,200. That was a pretty normal day for me I guess. Well ExRx is recommending that I go for about 2600. I guess there is just that big of a difference between good calories and bad calories? I need some advice here. Is ExRx a good "entry level" diet site to try and follow? I'm not really looking for a crash diet to lose extreme amounts of weight. just really looking for better habits about eating and excercise

I am very new to the "dieting" culture... I have never been on a diet before and I'm not that into athletic stuff. I guess what I'm asking is, what's the best way to start a diet? since a few days ago I have been walking around 45 minutes a day. Not like speed walking but not leisurely walking, either. Is that the best way to exercise without any other equipment or a gym membership? I know obviously running would be the best but I can only run about a block before i need to take a break. Is alternating between running and walking better?

And also what is /fit/'s opinion on diet soda? like with running, water is obviously a better choice but sometimes i would like to have something a little more...

thank you to anyone who read all of that. TLDR - basically, i'm wondering if ExRx is a good website to follow for making an "entry level" diet. and also what are the best excercise methods without equipment or a gym--running vs. walking, pushups, situps, etc

I'm your height and ideal weight, and am looking to drop about another 15 pounds and gain some muscle. Never been to that site, been using FitDay, and I walk at a brisk pace between 2-10 miles back and forth from work and do some calisthenics in the morning/evening. I swim and run with my flatmate on occasion and the counter says I eat about 1800 calories a day.

I'm thinking about getting a gym membership and starting Stronglifts 5x5, but for now that's my routine, and it's been working well.
