Hey /fit/,
I want to start training for wrestling/MMA. I've been lifting for years now, and have decent numbers in all my lifts, but have a number of questions when it comes to training for a specific sport. Firstly, although I'm strong, I have never been able to attain a good level of endurance (never better than a 6:30 mile, and my body fat percentage is around 10-12%). Secondly, what should I be doing to be better physically prepared for combat (I know muscular endurance is supreme, but I've also read about/talked to fighters who capitalized on brute strength and had great fight records. Also, should I be focusing on power or strength?). How often should I train? All that stuff.

Go and find a wrestling trainer. its pointless to ask /fit/ since you're going to need a trainer anyway.

As a fellow fighter, i'd suggest you to find yourself a good gym and a good teacher/trainer.

Also, the endurance to power ratio all depends on your fighting style and your physique. I'm 5.4 and i concentrate on brute strenght since i'm mainly fighting guys talller then me.

And for training it all depends, i train 2-3 times a week and weight lift 2-3 times a week. ( Depending of my school/work schedule.)

The biggest advice i could give you is find yourself a good gym, talk about your objectives with the trainer and I'll be able to direct you towards your goals.

I'm training at the Tristar Gym ( George Saint-Pierre trains here) and it helped me alot. It's one of hte nicest gym in Canada.

Speed, Surprise, Violence of Action. Those are the basics of Army doctrine, and it's the same for fighting.

OP expect to lose a little muscle mass if you want to increase your endurance. Keep in mind, that while strength IS a factor, it isn't the only one, nor the most important.

Focus on getting your cardio to what you think is ideal, then see how much musle you can keep on while maintaining that level of cardio training.

As for specific stuff, mix it up. Do a long run (over three miles) a couple times a week, plyometrics (sprints, stairs) a couple times.

Box drills and sprawl returns are good for explosiveness. That's stuff you can mix in with your lifting schedule.

If you are too worried about trying anything on your own, by all means go talk to whoever runs the gym you want to train at. I'm sure they have a set training schedule.

Unrelated to the endurance question, but relevant: Make sure your fight isn't one-dimensional. I'm a guy of similar build and I'll tell you, guys will definitely use the reach advantage. Learn to catch kicks --> takedown fast, and work on going in right when your opponent is off-balance (when their hands cock back for that combo)

Brute strength =/= dumb strength ftw

When you first start fight training, it'll probably involve punishingly long hours of conditioning through full-contact sparring and body weight work. It's supposed develop a solid foundation of fitness, and to make you suffer. Suffering is the most important, because it develops the killer instinct. If you don't have that, you're going to lose, no matter what.

Once you develop a solid base, powerlifting and Olympic lifting is a must. After technique, power is the most important to a fighter. Powerlifting gets you tremendously strong, and the O-lifts develop explosive power.
