Well at 5,8 and 250lbs your in pretty bad shape, and I'm sorry to say it, but chances are if you got into that kind of shape, then it will take you a lot of time and progression to get out of it, I know it did for me. This is what I started with, and I suggest you start with the same, after about a month I got somewhat addicted to the idea of working for a new body, its quite exillerating. (typo?)
With your body, 2000 calories is good, take that in daily, and try to eat around 400 calories per meal, spread at intervals through the day, thats about 5 meals, doing this will keep your metabolism active, and help burn the fat.
Walk for 45 minutes every morning, or night, I had a lot of time so I did both, if you have the time I suggest you also do. Don't try running or jogging yet, it will be bad for your knees.
Every 2nd or 3rd day, lift instead of walking, it makes the muscles work and as they repair and grow they increase metabolism. If your worried about getting muscular and bulky, don't. It takes far more work and wont happen if your losing fat.
Drink a lot, and I mean a LOT, about 8 glasses of water a day, it keeps you hydrated and stops those pointless cravings.
Don't by any means starve yourself, no matter how desperate you get. It's very bad for you, to begin with, and will most likely just slow down the weight loss unless you stop eating entirely.
Record progress, its a great way of encouraging yourself.
And if your someone who likes to snack constantly, but something that is low calorie but tastes nice, that way if you do slip, you dont slip onto a 1700 calorie bar of chocolate, I suggest flavored rice cakes, they are about 30 calories each, and if you desperately want something for flavor, they are quite nice.
Also, if you have a friend who'll exercise with you, ask away. If they come with you it can really take your mind off the exercise.
Good luck OP, thats about all I can add.
