Should I avoid all types of exercise on rest days or is cardio fine?

OP here, I was thinking a half hour swim if I have time, or some exercise bike work at home if I don't.

The only problem I have is that I play football(soccer) once a week, which is probably going to be pretty intense. Would this slow my progress?

maybe you should rethink what you want to achieve. If /fit/ is going to tell you to live a sedentary lifestyle outside of lifting weights (which sounds like bullshit) then maybe you should weigh up whether looking fit and being able to lift heavy objects 5x5 times a day is more important than actually being fit.

I see your point, but I'm not talking about spending the rest of my life doing nothing but the SS program, my goals will probably change in a few months.

All I'm asking for now is whether I should try to balance cardio and weight training, or just stick with weights for a few months and then worry about other things.

I've always done both. Every rest day do an hour swimming and 30 minutes jogging. So much bulking/cutting bullshit around, but to me sitting around and eating isn't an option. Sitting on your ass "recovering" may seem like justification for being slack, but all the built guys I know are covered in a thick layer of fat. They've got broad shoulders but not even a 4-pack. They could kick my ass in a fight, but they can't outrun me.

And before anyone here complains, this is a health and fitness board, not specifically a bodybuilding one. The truth is you can build muscle while still keeping fit with cardio, and if you play sport (which is one of the main reasons you should be keeping fit, not just to look good) then you should try to balance both.

Thanks. I think I'll do something similar, but on a fairly high calorie diet.
