I'm getting laid off in a few weeks and I'm going to use the time to sort my shit out and lose 2-3 stone. I'm planning to drop my calorie intake by 1000 a day and do more exercise. Any advice on how to prevent my manboobs becoming just excess skin?

Also, any advice on good calorie burning exercise that doesn't require equiptment? I'm pretty heavily overweight and unfit so jogging initially will be really bad for my knees.

Dropping weight more gradually will help avoid excess skin. 1000 calories seems a little extreme. But yeah, do some weight lifting, but preferably whole body exercises that hit your cardiovascular system. Hell, do dumbbell swings with a gallon jug of water. Do burpees, with a full squat and pushup. Just go slow and start with a low number so you don't hurt yourself.

Lose weight slowly and increase muscle mass with weightlifting.

cycling, that's how I got started when I was obese, but be aware that eventually you will want to amp it up to jogging (try to continually improve your 2 mile time) and sprints

Don't do this. Increase the amount of calories you burn, but try to maintain a deficit of about 500 per day. Keep eating the same amount of calories, but make them good calories, like lean meat and OATZ with little sugar and fat. Your diet is 70% of fat loss. Also eat as often as possible to increase your metabolic rate. Good luck!

I'm mostly overweight because of overeating. Dropping 1000 calories will probably mean 2000 calories a day which isn't too bad as long as I make sure I'm eating enough protein to support muscle growth

YES, eating less calories of the same shit of course is very effective! You won't feel too weak and unmotivated for your workout at all because your body will just burn less calories than it needs and magically turn fat into muscles!
And I'm sure once when you are done with your yearly I-eat-less-than-I-need diet your body won't just create more fat reserves for your next clever diet!
