Eat a banana!! I find that if I really push myself with my push ups I get pain for a few days, but when I have a banana at the end of my workout I feel fine.
Push ups are strange like that. You will start struggling to do any, then once you figgure out exactly how to do them you'll find that you can really push your limits for how many you can do at a time over a relatively short amount of workouts. Only 4 months ago I would ache and regret it if I did 20 pushups at once, now I can do 100+ over the course of a workout without any pain.
Once you can do a reasonable amount look into various types of push ups.
