It depends on what you want out of your training. There are 3 major goals you can pursue:
Leisure/Fitness Competitive Fighting Practical Fighting
If you're looking to just get in shape and have a good time, I recommend Capoeira, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, or any other specialty art that doesn't have an emphasis on training specifically for a competitive environment or defending yourself. I personally train Capoeira, and I love it. It's not that practical compared to other arts, and you don't train it to go and compete, but I have an awesome time with it.
If you want to do competitive fighting, get into boxing, sport Tae Kwon Do (look for the right school), Muay Thai, or any art that trains specifically to fight in a sporting environment. You can either do something like Boxing, which is just straight up boxing, or you can enter the MMA arena, which involves lots of cross-training.
And for strictly self defense, a nice amount of cross-training can help. Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai, Krav Maga...a lot of Police Officers and Military officials borrow techniques from many of those arts as they tend to be very effective.
Hope this helps some.
