They are effective, but if you just sit around eating fat and protein all day with no exercise you're still gonna be a giant fat ass. Probably gain it all back when you stop too if you do manage to lose some.
I'm not really sure about the validity of some of the claims about ketosis and a preference for burning fat. However, the cutting of simple sugars DOES decrease cravings. Calorie management is probably the most important part of losing weight and low carb diets do make it a little easier.
I find it pretty easy to follow, apart from days when I miss a couple meals during the middle of the day. I eat between 1500-1800 calories, eating when I'm hungry. 1hr of cardio plus some light strength training to avoid losing muscle. 8-9lbs a month, stronger every month. Metabolism is still decent.
