Yes.
I just do it for explosiveness, especially in the legs and hips. They're all pretty fun with the exception of the snatch; shit sucks.

it gets so painful when you go heavy. my technique is good too. it just makes my joints and muscles hurt like hell when i do heavy cleans and snatches.

with the amount of pain doing oly lifting puts you through, you are very right

yesterday i learned that my replacing of power cleans w/ rows in rippetoe is unacceptable and that they really aren't that hard and I should just do the goddamn power cleans.

So I'm starting Friday.

Can't wait.

How bad is olympic lifting for your knees?
I don't want to get replacements at 40.

No one should be doing O-lifts until they studied the movements extensively by reading and watching. Go rent a book from the library, they should have several books dedicated to the analysis of these two lifts, then watch as many videos as you can on the internet. If it hurts, you're either not strong enough for the weight or your technique is off.

I'm not really sure; but I have generally pretty lousy knees because of my height, and I haven't had any problems.
Make sure you stretch your lower back, and especially your hips/IT band. It can make a world of difference for people with bad knees.

Olympic lifters have the highest vertical jump of any class of athlete. During the pulls they're actually jumping, they just don't get much air because all the force is being transferred to the weight. But yeah, that's the idea.
