Artificial Sweeteners! The Inverted Jogger !E203O4hsXo
The Inverted Jogger here again with your Daily Knowledge Ingestion!

Today’s topic?
Sugar, Artificial Sweeteners, and why “diet” doesn’t necessarily mean what it says.

There is no doubt that over the past century, our consumption of sugars and fats has increased leading to increased heart disease, diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, and many other health risks. This has sparked a growing trend to turn towards “dietary” products that regale you with the promises of a slimmer and healthier physique. But are their products really standing up to their promises?

Aspartame is now the most commonly used artificial sweetener. You can look on nearly every dietary or sugarless product and find aspartame in it. Anything from diet soda, crystal light, candy, baked goods, you name it. So why do people believe Aspartame is a better choice than sugar? Well quite frankly, its only real benefit is a lack of calories, which in itself is also a bad thing.

Lets take a peak at some things Aspartame does to the human body;

The most common thing Aspartame does to the human body is cause cravings, which can be counter productive to people looking to stave said cravings and lose weight. Because of Aspartame’s sweet taste, when it hits the tongue it tells the body “Hey, foods on the way!” But when no calories enter the system your body then says “WTF, why are you holding out on me man!?” Because of this, many people don’t feel satiated by diet colas and then move on to consume other junk foods thus thwarting the whole point of consuming the dietary product in the first place.

Approximately 10% of aspartame, when it reaches the small intestine, is converted into Methanol, which is then absorbed by the body and converted into Formaldehyde. Another 40% of Aspartame is broken down into Aspartic acid, which spikes plasma levels in the body and cause sever damage to organs. Now, while the Methanol and Formaldehyde content is generally too small to cause any short term problems, studies show that long term consumption of these chemicals, mixed with the Aspartic acid, may cause a slew of brain problems listing anywhere from chronic headaches, memory loss, to an increased likelihood of Alzheimer’s Syndrome earlier in life. Aspartame has also been linked to other illness in the liver and kidneys.

It should also be noted that Aspartame when heated turns into Formaldehyde, so you should never heat it before drinking it. There have been cases where cooling units on trucks have broken down transforming entire shipments of dietary products into this deadly chemical.
>> Saccharine! The Inverted Jogger !E203O4hsXo

Saccharin works the same way as Aspartame does. It hits the tongue, tasting sweet, but its lack of calories causes cravings. A recent study in California showed that rats that ingested Saccharin sweetened yogurt gained an exponential amount of fat over the rats that just ate the normal yogurt. It’s also theorized that these kinds of sweeteners might flip a switch that cause your body to store more calories to combat the lack of calories provided by these substances.
You can check out : http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/570145 for info on this study.

Saccharin use has died off with the coming of Aspartame, but some countries still use it. In Canada it is banned for its links to cancer over an extended period of use.

So in conclusion, “diet” products, while lesser on caloric intake, may not live up to the promises of their high paid marketing teams, and come with a slew of health risks as bad as sugar itself. One might postulate that the only “good sweetener,” is no sweetener at all. We need to stop fooling ourselves into thinking its better just because its not sugar. For instance; for a diabetic, its just as bad as sugar. Diabetes increases the risk of early onset of Alzheimer’s, and Aspartame may just add to that.

So what should we be drinking? Well, if you enjoy pop, either sugar or artificial sweeteners shouldn’t cause much bodily harm when drank on the rare occasion (one 750ml bottle every couple weeks). But you should be finding alternatives to your pop cravings in water, teas, non-caffeinated coffee, etc.

Have a healthy day /fit/

Both Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners are bad for you, drink sparingly and switch to drinking healthier drinks like water.

T INVERTED JOGGER WHAT ABOUT SUCRALOSE
>> The Inverted Jogger !E203O4hsXo
>>22714
Not sure how I missed that. But its also not exactly great for you, and will react similarly with your body as Aspartame and Sacchrine. However Sucralose still has most of the calories that Sugar does, so for people looking for an alternative, normal sugar is probably better for you.

What about Stevia? I hear that's actually a good alternative to sugar. It's just hard to get a hold of because the FDA went LOL U CANT HAVE DAT
>> Anonymous
>>22748

Same reason alcohol and tobacco are legal: just because it's unhealthy for you doesn't mean it should be a crime to drink it.

>>22783
It probably should be, but the prohibition has shown us people are too weak to live without their vices to drown out their troubles.

With its extracts having up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar, stevia has garnered attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar food alternatives. Stevia also has shown promise in medical research for treating such conditions as obesity[1] and high blood pressure.[2][3] Stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose, even enhancing glucose tolerance;[4] therefore, it is attractive as a natural sweetener to diabetics and others on carbohydrate-controlled diets.[5] However, health and political controversies have limited stevia's availability in many countries; for example, the United States banned it in the early 1990s unless labeled as a supplement. Stevia is widely used as a sweetener in Japan, and it is now available in the US and Canada as a dietary supplement, although not as a food additive. Rebiana is the trade name for a stevia-derived sweetener being developed jointly by The Coca-Cola Company and Cargill with the intent of marketing in several countries and gaining regulatory approval in the US and EU.

WTF?! Aspartame gets approved but this shit doesn't? GOOD JOB AMERICA! Approving poison but not the substance that might actually help the fat problem.

I haven't read up much on it, but I have heard a lot of good things about Stevia. Considering its an all natural extract rather than a man made chemical, I'd have to assume its probably better for you than any other artificial sweetener on the market.
