Is there much risk of losing muscle when you are cutting fat? I am about 6'3, and I have been eating 1800-1900 calories per day and about 120g of protein per day. I am currently down to about 192.

How much do I really need to worry about losing muscle, considering I am still lifting (two day split) and getting a good amount of protein?

You should be fine as long as you don't lift too much, basically as long as you don't lift more than your caloric/protein intake you'll be fine.

Oh, I am also doing 45 minutes of cardio each day. That is probably important to note.

Wait, lift less? Is this actual advice coming from /fit/?

Not lift less, just don't overdo it, remember you are limiting your intake so if you lift way too much and don't take in enough you'll end up losing muscle.

I'm doing the same thing, although I'm taking 160 grams of protein a day instead. I've been doing this for almost 2 months and I've been at the same weight this whole time but losing fat.

Okay, thanks.

Should I be worried that I am not getting enough calories, considering I am taking in about 1800-1900, but burning about 500 per day on cardio? Basically, I want as big a deficit as I can manage without losing too much lean mass.

You should be fine.

Thanks for the reassurance. I was looking at online calculators, and they said I needed about 2500-2700 for maintainance, so I guess that means I am currently dropping somewhere around 1500 calories a day or so.. which means a few pounds a week? I will have to pay closer attention to my weight to see if this is accurate.

thats too much man..

I think that incorporated in my "heavy athletic activity," compensating for the cardio as well.

Read this book to find out how bad urdoinitwrong, I don't give a fuck enough to tell you.

But if you're a lazy fucker and won't read, to lose weight, make sure you do some form of cardio everyday to burn fat/calories (in the morning after you wake up is best, fasted cardio doesn't have to make you burn through glycogens, goes straight to fat), and do a lifting program to burn more fat/calories (indirectly, fat burning occurs after the workout throughout the day)... also, eat 6 small meals a day, eat lean protein with each meal, drink tonnes of water and cut your caloric intake by 500-1000 a day.

im talking about the deficit, 1500 a day is way too much

Well here's the deal: I am seeing results. I am losing fat. The only downside I am worried about is losing muscle. Is having this big a deficit going to do that?

Also, to you, from what I have read, fasted cardio is more likely to cause catabolism (burning your muscle for fuel.)

Okay, if I am going to do the Venuto "zig zag" method, what should me caloric goals be?

2000 cal for three days (with cardio), 2500 on lifting days (without cardio)?
