It'll affect your heart rate and in turn the number of calories burned.
For fat fucks such as myself who cannot maintain a low enough heart rate by jogging, walking on an incline is a great alternative. Just get walking at a comfortable pace, then increase the incline by 3%, check your heart rate, and keep inclining until you hit your target. If your legs get tired, reduce speed and increase incline.
BTW, target heart rate is (230 - your age) * .7
