Every reason you're vegetarian means you should be vegan; unless you're a hypocritical piece of shit.

Also, there are no deficiencies whatsoever - hence why the American Dietetic Association says it is suitable for every stage of one's life.

question: can babies forced to be vegans be breastfed?

Yes, and you don't force babies to be vegan, babies are supposed to be vegan anyway, they're not even nearly ready to try drinking milk or whatever.

>> OP
>>241414

"Force" isn't a good word. Babies aren't forced to be vegan anymore than they're forced to be an omnivore or a Christian.

Plus, so long as the mother has good nutrition, there is no reason why the baby would be malnourished. As I said before, the American Dietetic Association has said that veganism is suitable for every stage of life.
>> OP
>>241418

That wasn't me, the OP, but what he's saying is that the healthiest thing for babies is to be breastfed - which is vegan.

That's not hard to understand, is it?
>> OP
>>241418

By the way, malnutritioned isn't a word. I think you were reaching for malnourished.

So much for connecting coherence with dietary choice.
>> Anonymous
>>241413

The fuck is it doing when it's being breastfed then, dipshit?

Also in other news: feeding babies breastmilk makes them vegetarian, not vegan. Don't be a retarded douche and say human milk isn't an animal product.
>> Anonymous
>>241427

Next up: vegan denies the existence of the word "nutrition", while hypocritically sitting in a house with painted walls, eating off animal-tested glazes, alloys and lacquers, and using synthetic materials that have also been tested with animals.
>> OP
>>241430

Breastmilk is a natural part of the life cycle. Cow's milk is unnatural because it's meant for calves. Breastmilk is also unnatural for grown adults. But for babies, it's perfectly fine. Veganism is against the idea of taking that which we do not have permission to take. The mother gives the baby permission to take her milk, a cow does not give a farmer the permission to take her milk, nor her calf for veal.

>>241434

No, it's not just about food. Veganism is abolitionism, which means avoiding companies that test on animals, and animal byproducts in everyday items - including leather, gelatin, lanolin, etc.

>> OP
>>241452

I agree. I didn't go vegetarian to begin with because of animals. That only came after I actually did a lot of research into it.

The main reason I first went vegetarian was for health reasons. I was just sick of all the hormones and shit that were in every bite of meat.

That same mindset pretty much brought me around to veganism - I looked at what I was actually eating and realized there was a healthier alternative. I know, I know, moderation is key to everything - but there was something about just completely giving it up that was extremely satisfying. It was definitely a complete body detox.
>> Anonymous
>>241455
>It was definitely a complete body detox.
Idiot.
>> OP
>>241466

I'm being completely serious. If you give up meat and dairy and eggs, your body definitely notices. It takes a good 2 weeks or so for your body to adjust - and the same goes for going back. On rare, rare occasions that I eat out - say in a city visiting relatives - my body knows immediately if I ate a dish that had milk or eggs in it (this has only happened twice - usually chefs are smart enough to know what's in their own dishes, but a couple times I've been flat out lied to).

Meh, I was in a shitty mood earlier. I have problems with pugnacity, and figured I'd better stop being a bitch - vegans already have made a bad name for ourselves. I created the thread because I was bored, but now I actually am interested in the conversation, so I started behaving civilly (on 4chan? it's more likely than you think).

And what I meant in my prior post, was that I *agreed* with your stance on "cute-itarians" - that I didn't give a shit about animals when I first went vegetarian. I am curios, though, what your reasoning for going vegetarian is/was.

about 6 years ago, my best friend who is a vegetarian and his wife (a vegan) convinced me to give up meet. I was warned that it would take time for my body to adjust. After three months of getting weaker and feeling sicker. I finally said "fuck this, it ain't for me". Not everyone can be a vegetarian as much as those poorly informed food nazis would like you to think they can.
I am 6'2", 175 pounds (I am cyclist so no big bulky muscles) 32 waist 40 chest. My resting bp is 100/70 with pulse about 55
I just so tired of hearing the detox bullshit.
>> OP
>>241518

Not sure what to say to that. There's nothing inherently "less nutritious" about being vegan over eating meat - because obviously, vegans get the same vitamins, etc as meat eaters, just from different sources.

One common complaint I've heard though, is that it is hard for some people to get "full" when switching to a vegan diet. That problem went away for me about a month after I switched, but I suppose I can understand that some body types might take a lot longer to adjust to that feeling.

I wonder what affects the quickness of that adjustment.

I also laughed at the "poorly informed food nazi" comment, because I've met those exact same people. It's annoying, really, that the most vocal of the vegan group are also the most annoying and the most ill informed.

Whatever, though - in the next 50 years with the rising cost of food and the unsustainable meat consumption rate a dramatic portion of the population will either have to be vegetarians or start eating lab grown meat (fucking PETA).
>> Anonymous
>>241540
actually there are several vitamins/nutrients that much more difficult to get with a vegetarian diet. One of them is B12. It's also difficult to get large amounts of protein if you are training with a veg diet.
How many fat/lazy/hypertensive carnivorous animals do you see in the wild? Some wild cats eat almost exclusively meat. Meat is not the enemy. Anything can cause health problems if not consumed in moderation. A guy DIED a few months ago because he drank too much water.

>>241491
Okay then. I always start out in fuckwit asshole mode as well since it's easier I guess.

When I said I was a life long vegetarian I meant that quite literally. 24 years and I've never swallowed a piece of meat. When I was a toddler I always spat it out, and I've tried it again and again over the years and was never able to get over the texture. Meat-textured quorn is just as disgusting to me.

Ever since I've started reading up on nutrition I've been eating healthier. A vegetarian diet can be just as bad as a normal one if you have no idea what you're doing. I lived off pasta for years and I've still got the scrawny chest to show for it. Basically I was getting minimal amounts of protein.

I could never imagine being a vegan since I already find it difficult enough to balance my diet so it's decent without imposing yet another arbitrary boundary of what I should or should not eat. I would not for the life of me give up the tastiest and easiest source of protein for me - eggs. And I love cheese. I'm Swiss, what can I say.

Pic related, it's a vegan body builder. That's one dedicated individual right there.
>> OP
>>241551

True - I drink fortified Rice Dream and take a supplement to ensure I get the proper amount of b12 - and as for protein, both vegan and omni athletes take some sort of protein supplement in addition to their meals.

Cats actually are physically unable to be vegetarian. Their bodies do not have the ability to get the required vitamins from just plant based sources - they have to eat meat. An interesting evolutionary byproduct.

I understand that meat in moderation is not inherently unhealthy for the body - but the more pressing issue, in my opinion, is the effect mass consumption of animals is having on the environment. Cattle already are responsible for a higher percentage of greenhouse gases than automobiles, and runoff from cattle farms poisons water supplies.

Furthermore, I don't see how rising consumption is sustainable. With the industrialization of China, we will soon have another 1.3bn people with the desire to consume meat at same rate as Americans (which is about 14bn cows/year). The future will hold some interesting challenges, indeed.
>> Anonymous
>>241572
like I said - moderation - and guess the complicated thing is that what counts as moderation depends and what you are talking about. When it comes to red meat many people say you should not have it more that once a week. Beef production as you point out is not ecological (btw - much organic produce is also not eco, but that's another story). But beef once a week still leaves many other fairly healthy choices that don't have the same impact as beef - many varieties fish, lean chicken, turkey, egg whites. I cannot think of any non-animal food that can match chicken ounce for ounce. Even harder - salmon.
Lastly - there are people in the world that really like to eat and I am one of them. I seems that people who enjoy eating tofu and drinking soy milk don't have that same love of eating. There doctor on the TV a while back who said that people would live longer if they ate much less, he tried it for a while and he said "it's an unpleasant way to exist". So I am going to have my one hamberger or steak every week, have salmon, occasional tuna, eggs whites, 2% milk, and sometimes cheat with half&half, butter, a very infrequent Foie gras, and balance it all with fruit and vegetables. I really don't have much choice - I have to eat 3500 a DAY just to maintain my 175 pound weight
>> OP
>>241605

Well, I think that's a common misconception - that vegan food is somehow less tasty or satisfying.

I think it forces you to think outside of the box, and try some really great recipes - especially foreign recipes. Today I ate at my favorite Korean restaurant - and had a spicy soup loaded with vegetables and tofu, with a large bowl of rice that I put into the bowl as well. Extremely filling and satisfying.

If you ever have the chance, check out any vegan cookbook - it's chock full of amazing recipes. But that's not to say that we couldn't maintain our eating habits if we wanted to. Nowadays there is a vegan substitute for everything. I just don't find them to be as appealing. However, soy milk chocolate bars taste just like the real thing - I found. Rice Dream ice cream was good, but not great. Imitation meat is okay, Morningstar is the best.

In general, any vegan who complains about their food is just doing it wrong.

But I'm headed off to sleep - it's late here. I'm studying abroad in China - which, thankfully and surprisingly, is quite vegan friendly.

Wait.
Wait. Wait. Wait. You think being vegan is natural?! Lolasaurus. We first we were hunter-gathers, then we were cultivators, which is arguably what we still are. Our entire history, and the history of all animals around us is based on how natural it is for us to eat them. Goats, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and innumerable other animals only exist as they do because we eat them. It's natural as fuck. If it is so 'unnatural' to drink cows milk, why have we (Western Europeans [unlucky africa and china]) evolved to digest milk? We have a gene allowing us to digest it - Chinks can't, makes them sick, so they have to have soya.

You're kidding yourself if you think it's natural. Try living off the land in a rural area of where ever you live, being "vegan". See how fast you die. I've done it, and it's hard enough even with meat (no mammals where I was, just lizards).

not the OP here. it being natural or not has no bearing on my decision to do it. if i only did what was 'natural' i'd be running around naked and living in a cave.

i respect people who are living off the land and hunting/gathering their own food but i am not in that situation. so i can and will eat vegan because i do not need animal protein to live my life and be healthy.

also, 75% of people worldwide are lactose intolerant (if you believe wikipedia).

not a misconception on my end but an observation. Every time my vegan/vegetarian friends have given me some shit that is suppose to take the place of meat/dairy it always tasted pretty bad. Tufu pops - shit. Soy milk - shit. Carob - triple shit. It's not I didn't try - I did. I just have much higher expectation for food. I don't eat to fill up, I eat because I like to eat.
I even visited some veg/vegan restaurants. Over priced dishes that didn't taste very good. I already know how to cook vegetables in ways that are more interesting than those place.
All that said - what have you had that you think will be even HALF as interesting to me as a black&blue filet mignon, or a plate of sushi?

....69 here.

>>241919
I'm not lactose intolerant, because I'm the top dog. Fuck yeah, white people.

So why are you vegan? Not because it's natural.. not because it tastes better (even if it did, you could still eat it all with meat, if it were for taste reasons), there's not such thing as meat intolerance, so my guess is.,..

You're just a big pussy, feeling bad for the animals? Not being a troll, I'm genuinely curious.

If you don't eat the animals, they'll eat you. If everyone in the world was a vegetarian, chickens would overproduce and eat us.
