Know in advance what you will do. This means researching. That is part of getting fit. You will now know all the muscle groups and the exercises to hit them. In your newfound newbie enlightenment, just don't rush around telling others how to lift right.
Also, start small. Doing a 95 lbs bench for 8 safe reps is much less embarassing than being buried under a 135 lbs bench after 7 shaky reps and causing everyone to rush to save your feeble ass.
Oh, and this is only a personal favor: don't grunt or flash poses into the mirror until you have something to merit the activity.
