So after watching the Olympics and seeing alot of swimming it has encouraged me to get back into shape with swimming. Now Im a bit fat , im 6ft and about 210 pounds. I really enjoy swimming and did alot of it as a kid. I was thinking of swimming 2-3 times a week for an 1 to 1 and a half hours doing laps of various strokes. Im guessing it will work my upper body and legs.

tl;dr Should a fatty swim into shape ?

Only good if you cross train

Because of the cold water, swimming actually deludes your body into thinking it needs to keep body fat

Well , the place Im thinking of swimming is inside and heated so the water is in no way cold.

But yes cross training would also include some sort of regime at the gym.
