Why do so many bodybuilding resources state that... Anonymous
most people who try to pack on muscle...fail?

"Many try to slim down but fail."

"Many try to bulk up but fail."

In bodybuilding books (or anywhere you can get info on packing on muscle) there's always a statement like that.

My question is, is there something most people who are trying to lose fat/gain muscle are doing wrong? Or are those just statements to sway you into listening to that article/author/resource more attentively?

I think most out of shape people know exactly what to do to get into the shape they want. Their biggest problem is actually doing it.

Lack of motivation makes people quit, and therefore fail.

They're trying to do both at the same time.

It's hard to do something wrong and not realize what it is you're screwing up. If you're trying to slim down by jogging every morning, but you have that piece of cheesecake with dinner every evening, it's easy to see what you're doing wrong.

Probably just a lack of motivation.

The biggest problem is that people try to limit exercise as a hobby instead of a lifestyle.

Some people exercise for half an hour and that's the only health-conscious thing they do all day. Some people diet for weeks and as soon as they starve themselves to their target weight, it's back to their old habits.

Getting fit is a lifestyle. You must commit yourself to it on ALL fronts. There's much, much more to bodybuilding than lifting heavy weights, and there's much, much more to dieting than eating rabbit food.

I'd say lack of results.

Or too many "proper techniques" given. Such as "don't eat carbs before such and such! Eat only this fruit before the workout! Too much sugar in that!" This causes an overload.

Even with my all natural eating habits now, there's just SO much attached to how and when you should eat something to give the maximum results.

Losing weight and gaining muscle is very tedious, boring, and discouraging.

If you try to do both, I imagine its next to impossible to have the right diet. Think about it. If you work out hard, you need a certain amount of protein to build muscle. If you get too little, you won't get any bigger; so although you might be losing fat, you aren't gaining muscle. If you get too much, you'll start putting on fat; so although you'll be gaining muscle, you'll also be a fatty. That's why /fit/ is always screaming BULK THEN CUT, OVER AND OVER!

If there is one thing that people do wrong all the time to slim down, its starve themselves.

because it takes a long time. and most people are very impatient.
