I'm not an expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt but in my experience, the elliptical isn't very close to a natural running style, it's uncomfortable for me to run on one.
Obviously, a treadmill is going to require you to run in your normal style, for better or worse. Unless you're heavy or have some sort of unknown damage, the running shouldn't be a problem. Just remember that training through injuries doesn't prove anything, making them worse is pointless and can lead to lifetime damage.
As for your eight to twelve mile running regimen, I don't quite understand that distance. If you're going that far, it seems like you should be running harder. Just running and running isn't as helpful to training your stamina and speed as running harder would be.
