Any deadlifters here? How can I up my max to 405 lbs? Should I be squatting for more leg power, work on my lower back more or something else?
>> Anonymous
You can try deadlifting to get better at deadlifting.

i recommend working on your hams and glutes to help with deadlifting. Quads too of course. Also dont use straps and use a belt. Remember to push with your legs not only your back, and bring the weight down in a controlled motion. Also keep your back straight, you dont want to look like a ? mark as you deadlift. Theres no quick trick to increasing your deadlift you just have to work at it like anything else.

I agree with this.

I focused my DLs by driving through the floor with my feet. Also, if you have good equipment, it can really boost your lifts. We had a nice new wood platform and rubber weights at my place. Makes a big difference over metal weights and concrete.

Watch your lower back and rotator cuff.

Is there any type of formulaic deadlift plateau for the average lifter? I mean, if you're a certain weight, is there essentially a physiological max for your body type?

I am 155, just started deadlifting a few weeks ago. I'm at 185 now, and I no I'm no where close to a plateau (I hope), but am curious if my gains will start to drop off soon.

this. plus, start examining your weak points. once you have identified your weak spots, use specific exercises and modified routines to target these. for instance, if you see that you have a hard tim getting through the mid point, use aides to help train this part. use chains, platform lifts etc etc..do some research.

no way to tell. istarted lifting when i was 18 and i was 160 at 5'7. i'm now 180 (not cut or anything, still kinda fat) and i never focused on hypertrophy, only strength and i'm 24 now and have maxed out at 405. after i reached this goal, i trained to maintain my strength and while i routinely max out at 400+ i never trained to get much further. so yeah, like i said, there is no telling. it will take years and years and years to get to a plateu.

I have no idea how valid these numbers are. Use as a rough guideline

Form is fucking important. I don't care if you have to use lighter weights. As long as your form is correct and you get your sets in. Then keep increasing the weight. Learn to train with Maximal,Sub-maximal/repeated effort, and Dynamic effort weights. Maximal 80-95% of 1RM for singles or doubles. Sub-maximal 40-50% of 1RM till failure,Dynamic effort 40-70% of 1RM for a desired setxreps(5x5)
GET THIS SHIT, BRO!!!!!

I'm currently working in a 4 set deadlift routine with reps of 10, 8, 6, 4 and adding 10lbs more each week. I've been making decent progress, and with what I think is good form. I'm hesitant to change to the 5x5 technique because I have something that works for me. Am I really not getting all that I can be out of this exercise?

weakness from floor=more quads. moar front squats

weakness mid point-lockout=more ham/lower back strength. moar GM's, GHRs, RDLs, back extension, etc.

weakness grip=moar grip

You'll stall faster that way. Once you can deadlift 1.5xbw(if you haven't already) I suggest you should go to 1x5. But if its really working for you(since everyone is different) then disregard this lol
FUCK THIS SHIT!!!!!

405lb DL @ 150lb BW here.

I didn't do anything particularly special to get my deadlift high, I just deadlifted as well as lots of other compound movements, lots of Olympic lifts.

The only thing I can stress is do GM's/RDL.. I neglected them and my back would round really badly.. I only recently started working on it and can finally do decent weight with a heavy arch.

340 DL @ 165 lb here
It's not high yet, but that'll change. I don't know how I'm doing it, but I got there in 3 month's time, doing DLs once or twice a week, doing no more than 3 or 4 total each time at my 1Rep max. Once the muscle healed, I went again at 10 or 20 lb more, and managed to pull it off with veins popping out and turning red. Rinsed, repeated, and then threw on 50 extra lb just for kicks... same story, managed with everything in me to do it, proper form of course.

I'm an idiot and I fear one day I'll kill myself by deadlifting a little more than I'm physically capable of.

135lbs deadlift, 194.6 lbs body weight. However, I fractured my spine (L1 burst fracture) when I was 17. So I beat all of you.

rack pulls brah.

anyway whats your grip? Im @ 350 now with clean grip...don't think i can do much more w/o switching over to dirty
>> Anonymous
Op here, I'm 5'9'' 155lbs and my dead right now is 350lbs 1rpm. I feel every time I add on 10 more pounds it seems like 50 pounds heavier. Maybe I'm just at a plateau?

thats how shit works brah! 5kilos in oly lifting is a WR or 5th place

160 lbs, 225 x 4 reps for deadlifts, no idea what my 1rm is.

18/m here, ~170#, max DL 360#

Frankly, I just deadlift. Common rep schemes for me are 5-3-2-2-2-1-1-1, or 5x5, or 7x1 (seven singles, not one set of seven). I switch to the alternating grip when I feel my hands starting to slip. I agree with the fellow who suggested Oly-lifting. I mean shit, everyone should Oly lift, IMHO

Is 5x5 workout really as simple as I've been reading? I should simply start with the bar ( or a preset light weight) and do 5 sets of 5 reps at the same weight, adding 5 lbs each week?
>> Anonymous
2.2 times your bodyweight isn't a bad goal, especially if you're using a clean grip and lifting conventional.

try doing snatch-grip deadlifts on a 4-inch box. these are unlike sumos in that they increase the ROM and activate more motor units. in addition they will make you a mean mofo.

for a conventional DL my best is 475 at 185.

depends on your style of lift op

find the weak point and train it

Start doing snatch or full clean to get the "pop" from your hips. Some people say to drive your feet into the floor when deadlifting, others say pull with the back and stand, but it's all in the pop. I would change your rep/set makeup (so do something like 5x5 if you're doing 1x10, or 10x5 if you're doing whatever, etc) and use different variations of the deadlift, like the Romanian, Sumo, hyena, etc. Try leaning out too so even if your numbers don't go up you can still brag about your strength:weight ratio.

Also, squoatz.
