to answer OP's question: i dropped 30 lbs in 2 months by cutting my caloric intake substantially (probably to around 1200-1400 calories/day from 2000-2200/ day. I went from 5'9" 190 lbs, to 160lbs, and at one point I was 155 lbs.
However, I had lost all my muscle mass. Two months ago, I could barely run 1/2 a mile. Now, I've been running 3-4 times/week and can do 3 miles pretty easily, and am gaining muscle again.
moral of the story is just fucking do it. stop contemplating the nuances of weight-loss and exercise, doing so will only make you more idle and fatter. it's not rocket science, eat less and run more /thread.
