i'm at a healthy weight right now, and over all i'm cool with my body, but i'm looking to tone up a bit for the summer. crunches and another exercise i'm not sure of the name of have been great for my stomach, i can see results pretty quick. but i'm lost about the best exercises for the upper leg/thigh. any suggestions? thanks!

one last question...i've been lying on my back and doing bicycle legs 20 minutes a day. Obviously that is good for plain excercise, but is it good for the thigh toning?

Step 1: stop saying "tone". It's something women and bad PTs say to convince women they aren't going to end up looking like a body builder, as if anyone ever accidentally got huge muscles. This is kind of a semantic thing but the word also takes on an odd magical quality that allows women to justify using inferior training methods.

If you want your legs to look better you want to

1. lose fat
2. gain muscle.

We're focusing on the latter in the weight room though the metabolism gains will help with the former.

You want to work out like a body builder. Doing 115,000 reps of an exercise is NOT going to build muscle and it's not going to make you look better. You need to lift like a man. Heavy weight (relatively speaking of course) and moderate rep ranges (8-15). You need to focus on compound lifts, most importantly squats. Lunges, straight leg dead lift, and front squats are a couple of other great exercises. Compound lifts recruit more muscles and are thus VASTLY more efficient at building muscle and strength. No machines. No machines. No machines.

In answer to your question, No. No it doesn't.

Train like a dude, train hard, and once your legs are as big as you like them, just train them with 1 set of 8-12 every week, they wont grow anymore, but they wont shrinky.

Hmm...interesting good stuff. I guess the thing is I like my legs the way they are over all, but the upper thighs are not as firm as I want and could be SLIGHTLY slimmer. lower thigh down, I'm pretty happy with.

so I'll definitely keep a lot of these tips in mind about building muscle and what not. i think what it boils down to is I need to squat.

good comments, plus and you cant "spot" lose weight, your body predetermines where you lose fat from, so running is just as likely to help you lose fat from the stomach area as doing a crunch for instance. Targetted exercises just increase muscle development in that area, not burning fat..
