They actually did both, first working them like dogs, then applying makeup to enhance definition, then using cg to enhance it even more.

OP, first do you have a low enough bf% to even see abs?
If so, then do weighted cable pull-down crunches, russian twists on a decline w/ a 10lb ball, weighted leg-lifts. Basically, use weights as your abs are muscle and require heavier resistance to grow just like other muscles.

abs, just like any muscle, only grow larger when you work them with heavy weight. try some weighted ab exercises that you can only complete 6-8 repetitions of and you should be golden.
