Hi /fit/

I'm a 20yr old female college student roughly at around 180 pounds. I was wondering if anyone had some good ideas for motivation to do exercise. I don't eat too bad, i don't like fast food, I eat plenty of fruits and veggies. I just have a hard time getting the right passion or "oomf" to do something. What helped you out, what motivated you? what still does? I know some people might say look in a mirror, but I've been overweight all my life, it doesn't bother me, I'm more in it for the health benefit if anything. I just can't seem to get around to doing it.

I like to create perceived threats to scare me into action. Sometimes I imagine nazi zombies rising out of my backyard with GOLDEN LUGERS and they're hungry for my man flesh. Or there could be a big guy with a machine-gun upstairs who wants to take my anal virginity. I just think about something like that for a few minutes and then tell myself that every bit of strength I can gain will help me in a situation like the ones above, so I should probably go to the gym.

There's 2 obvious ways to motivate someone: Say you have to clean the garage. You can get motivated by either a plate of cookies if you finish, or by a spanking if you don't.

Another less obvious but much more powerful is something called pure "necessity level." Basically put, you don't even fucking listen to excuses( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obdd31Q9PqA ), you just go. You don't even put any thought into it. You just do it. Whatever makes your necessity level the highest.

Some people use the supposedly shallow reason that they are improving their body to attract the opposite sex - hey, if that's the highest motivation factor for them, who gives a fuck?

To look at this another way - person A has 2 hobbies that they do in their spare time. Person B has 3. If they both do their hobbies well, what's the difference? Necessity factor. They put their hobbies above the usual crap of watching tv, playing video games, etc.

You should deal with your weight as soon as you can. The older you are the harder it becomes and once you lose some weight and start exercising you'll wonder why the fuck you didn't do it before.

What motivates me?

Being on the wrong side of 25. Being overweight and gaining weight each and every year. Finding that my wife no longer wanted to rim me. Looking in the mirror and thinking 'well I wouldn't want to fucking rim me either!'.

If you really are OP, then you really have to step back and ask yourself why you don't feel disgusted with yourself. 4'11" and 180lbs? You have a BMI of nearly 37, when a healthy BMI should be around 23-25. You must look like a fat penguin having to waddle everywhere instead of WALKING. Stop kidding yourself that you eat well and aren't very concerned about your weight or image, because with a BMI of 37 it's a SERIOUS problem.

I'm with this guy, OP. Don't think about doing your exercise, just fucking do it. Start out light, if you're at college, they must have a track/trail/streets/something that you can walk along. Go for a 30 minute walk everyday. Don't start out crazy because you'll chafe the fuck out of your thighs and the pain will demotivate the shit outta you.

So walk for 30 minutes everyday for a week. After that, use 5 minute intervals to work yourself up to 45-60 minutes a day. Once this is out of the way, then start working on your jogging/running. Then start mixing in some light weight lifting.

Another important aspect is to WATCH WHAT YOU ARE EATING. Both quality and quantity count. Here's what I do to calculate how many calories I need: 150 (what I NEED to weigh) x 18 (maintenance multipler) = 2700 kcal/day. Since this is horseshit and I don't need this many calories, I take another 20% off to make it 2160 (I don't even make it to this limit on most days, and I never feel hungry).

Try that for a month or 2. If you're not seeing results, drop another 500 kcal and try again. Switch from 3 big meals to 5-6 smaller meals. Drink 1 gallon of water per day. Keep that metabolism moving. Try not to eat within 3-4 hours of sleep.

The most important thing is your head. Your diet and exercise must be "Non-Negotiable Habits". Do them, don't blow them off, don't compromise them, if you are serious about losing the weight you will see serious results.

Sorry, I'm throwing out the bullshit flag on this one. Weight loss is 90% nutrition, 10% exercise. If you're eating frootz/veggies and "don't like fast food", then you must really like alcohol.

sounds like you like bread and carbs. I'd say cut back on your carb/bread intake and walk a lot more then just to class and back.

Get someone who is motivated to go to the gym and tag alone with them and start with something low impact like biking.

Seriously, I grabbed a gymnast from one of my classes and run/go to the gym with her regularly now. It's great when you have someone who can hassle you to make sure you're going to the gym.

and for the LOVE OF GOD! Take pictures of yourself to keep track of how much you are losing. You would be surprised how much of an inspiration it is to keep your ass in the gym after seeing lumps and rolls disappear. Don't weigh yourself! It's inaccurate and can be defeating when you gain some water weight or any other number of things that can cause 2-3 lbs of weight fluctuation.
Track your time/distance for your runs and watch yourself progress. Take a clipboard when you work up to weights and keep track of what weight and how many you can do.

That's what the food pyramid likes to tell you. Carbohydrates are probably the least necessary macronutrient. Most of it should come from fruits and vegetables. Of course, I'm not talking bad shit about bread, the shit is delicious.

Anyway, figure out how many calories you expend in a day normally, reduce a maximum of 500 calories from it, and do 30-45 minutes of cardio work outs 5-7 a week. Do some weight lifting as well, but do it right... Websites like bodybuilding.com are good sites to learn if you know nothing.

But yeah. Fruits and vegetables sound healthy and they are, but fruits have calories that can add up just as any food can. Have a good diet, exercise, and you'll see a great difference in just half a year. But remember to not "go on a diet." That shit is just stupid. You need to change the way you eat and stick to it for life, or you'll just get back to where you are now.
