I have an hourglass figure. But I don't like it. That is to say, I'm fine with my the hips, but I can't stand my broad shoulders.

When I work out I focus mainly on base or core--glutes, quads, abs, obliques etc. and tend to neglect my upper body muscles since I have it set in my mind that it will make my frame up there even wider.

Basically, I ask: Am I wrong about that? If so, is there any specific exercise or muscle I can work to get a slimmer ribcage and shoulders without reducing my hips?

I usually put up with it by wearing a lot of long-sleeves and the like, but whenever swimsuit season comes up it gets me all frustrated and shit. I'd like to just get rid of the problem entirely this year.

Maybe I'm just stuck with man shoulders.

She's not spot reducing. She's spot building to diminish the relative size of her shoulders.

HOWEVER

You look just fine like you are. Working one half of your body is a bad idea, both health & aesthetically speaking. You risk injury to your weaker muscles if you have a muscle group that is too much stronger. So work out your whole body. You won't gain big muscles, and your shoulders won't get any broader. You'll just be more well rounded, healthy, and able to burn fat a little better, should you decide you want to tone more.

Yeah, the idea I had was that I'd draw attention away from them if my other significant curves were more prominent.

I can pull them back really tightly, but it makes my back look all sorts of fucked up.

It looks to me like any weight you put on will go right to your hips, which will diminish your shoulders by comparison. However, your chest width is about as small as it is going to get. Sorry =(

If you want to lose shoulder mass, my recommendations would be to do more running, swimming and cycling, but don't completely forget about core workouts. Bridges, squats, pull-ups are all great for trimming out the fat.

If you keep you anaerobic and aerobic workouts OK, your shoulders should thin out while your legs and arms get stronger.

I don't think there's a way to un-broaden shoulders, that's genetics. But, to join the chorus, I think there is nothing wrong with your shoulders, and even if there were, the rest of you more than makes up for it.

I know it's very difficult to just dismiss something you personally find fault with, but do consider the fact that most everyone either doesn't see your shoulders as a fault or simply don't care.

If your concern is that they make you look less feminine, this is not the case.

You can't slim the rib cage or shoulders, they're set in bone, which is almost as solid as set in stone.

There is nothing wrong with the width of your shoulders.

And why don't you want to reduce your hips? Number 1, hips are bone, so they're going to stay wide. You are carrying extra weight in your abdomin. You hips look wider than your shoulders in the second pic.

I think you should focus on adding some muscle and losing about 8lbs.

judging from your first picture id say just build up more muscle mass in your legs. As you lose weight over your body but build up muscle in the thighs/ass/etc your legs will appear much thicker in comparison to the rest of your body. However, the real big thing i think is there's generally just not alot of definition in them right now. Fix that and i think youll like the results.

Neglecting the muscle of your upper body will only hurt you in the long run. You're thin but not particularly lean. Over time your naturally thin frame will begin to store fat more easily; you won't be a college freshman forever. When the skin of your arm begins to resemble a ziploc bag full of pancake batter you'll wish you'd built some triceps along the way.
