Anyone out there box amateur / recreational? I really wanna start up but wanna prepare myself first. What stuff do I need to buy before starting? I'm pretty much sedentary at the moment, with the exception of walking around during the day. Will I suffer a brain hemorrhage if I go to my local boxing gym? What do I need before starting?

To start out all you need is a decent pair of bag gloves, good runners for now, and lots of motivation. Chances are you will not be sparring for a few months or more it all depends of what your coach thinks. And you will not hemorrhage unless you are sparring pro's or use the best solution and block without using your face.

If it's a gym that throws you into the ring on your first day to "see what you've got", leave. It's not a good gym.

A good gym will teach you basics, run you through drills, work up your cardio, and gradually work you towards sparring.

You don't need shit. Just some shorts, a mouthguard, and some wrestling shoes (they're cheaper than boxing shoes, and work just as well).

After a while, you'll probably want your own headgear, because it sucks having to use the blood-encrusted one owned by the gym. Also, once things come together and you learn to hit harder, you'll probably want to buy some hand wraps.

I've been doing rippetoes starting strength for 2 weeks now, I read that lifting weights will make me bulky and slow for boxing. I do feel sort of sluggish. Am I irreversibly slow from squatz?

Definitely get some wraps

you can lift weights and still be fast.
I ran sprints in high school, and ended up going to the state finals, where my sprint team broke our school record.
