Olympic Racewalking Anonymous
Okay, I'm listening to the news and they did an article on Olympic Racewalking. It seems the track at Beijing is on a granite course. They're bitching because the surface is too hard and they might get injured. So, I guess they are getting a new track.

I'm like, "WTF!? OLYMPIC RACEWALKING!?!?!" So, I google it and read up on it in wikipedia:

"There are two rules that govern racewalking.[1] The first dictates that the athlete's back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched. Violation of this rule is known as loss of contact. The second rule requires that the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes over it. These rules are judged by the human eye, which creates controversy at today's high speeds. Athletes may sometimes lose contact for a few milliseconds per stride which can be caught on high-speed film, but such a short flight phase is undetectable to the human eye." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racewalking

Racewalking...

...

WTF.

Holy shit, these people are supreme pussies. 1 they can't make it into a REAL Olympic event. 2 they might get hurt by WALKING on a surface that's "too hard." What the hell do these people walk on normally when not racing? Asphalt, concrete sidewalks, tile, etc. Do they really fucking need a recycled tire-based soft track? One "athlete" was being interviewed. I can't remember what he said because all I heard was, "BAAAAAWWWWW!!!!"

WTF, /fit/!?

>These rules are judged by the human eye, which creates controversy at today's high speeds.

>high speeds

I laughed.

>they might get hurt by WALKING on a surface that's "too hard."

I laughed again and then kind of raged. In the summer I run barefoot on cobblestone and have absolutely no trouble. Fuck these people. Can you imagine what the original Olympians would think of this shit?

Racewalking. I instantly think of my old teen job of working in the mall. In the morning 100s of old people pour in wearing jogging suits and headbands. Then they start making laps. They actually cause lots of wind. For the next 3 hours it smells like old people and Bengay.

>Olympic distances are 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) and 50 kilometers (31 miles).

I can RUN 12.4 miles without a problem. 31 miles? Okay you got me there, but I could sure as fuck WALK 31 miles.

"While racewalking is the official name for the sport, many people who are not familiar with the event call it speedwalking, as racers walk at a fast pace. This term is disliked by racewalkers, as it is the term that was used by those in the fitness industry (i.e. not track & field) to denote extra exertion while walking, but without any of the rules explained above. Basically, speedwalking is the same thing as power walking."

LOLOLOLOL Oh god, they don't like for you to call it SPEEDWALKING!

It's the same fucking thing. It's not they are any fucking bunch of ELITE ATHLETES or any shit.

I mean LOOK at this pic>>280733It looks like they are all wagging their asses like women in high heels. I know that's what's happening because I've seen people speedwalk before. It's embarrassing.

>World-class racewalkers (male and female) can average under seven and eight minutes per mile (or under four and five minutes per kilometre), respectively, in a 20 km (12.4 mile) racewalk.[2]

You all need to STFU... I've seen kids who can't jog that. That being said.. it's not a sport I'll watch or get excited about.

That would only be even vaguely impressive if they were all handicapped or something.

No that's like jogging/running on a treadmill. I don't even seem most of my gym do 7mph which works out to a little under 9min/mi.

15min or so is a decent mile walking
