Okay /fit/ I have two questions.

1) Is there a best time in the day to work out? Right when you wake up? Right before you go to sleep? Mid-day? Does it even matter?

2) Can you recommend a good Cardio program? Preferably something I can watch, since I'm not really experienced enough to know if I'm doing everything right, but really anything to get started is fine.

Pic is my dog, because I don't have anything related.

well, i always heard it's bad to work out around the time you go to bed because you won't be able to get to sleep. (since exercising energizes you and shit)

people say a lot of things, but the best time is whenever it is most convenient and makes you happiest.

Hmm, I'll keep that in mind.

Alright then. I just wondered because there are best times for other things. Like not eating before you go to bed, or studying in the morning.

1) Whenever is convenient, though its suggested doing it in the morning will boost metabolism over the day. Personally i do it around 10 or 11am, then again at 3 or 4pm.

2) What is your current cardio program and we can help you fix it or suggest a better one.

Some times are better for some things than others (i.e. the hard to sleep thing... or waiting a few hours after getting up to lift weights for maximum power level, or running before breakfast because some poeple thing that works better)... But the ups/downs of those things are all minimal to the positive results you'll get from sticking to your schedule and working out every day - much easier when done at your favorite time.

Honestly, right now I'm reduced to doing "Slim in 6"'s basic workout. It's all I have available at the moment. It's basically mostly squats and lunges, with a very small amount of actual cardio worked in.

Good to know about the metabolism boost.

I personally go for mid day, I"m not drained as soon as a I wake up and I can also go to sleep easily and easier for that matter.

I usually wake up and eat a bowl of total or some other cereal that has a decent nutritional value, and some juice or something.

The cardio part is determined by well, how fit you already are. Figure I'm 253lbs (114kg) right now and I try jogging/walking for at least 2 hours a day.

Try walking for 10-15 mins and jogging not running (go at a moderate pace where your not running or walking, your in between) for at least 5 mins then cycle back to walking for 10-15 mins and repeat. Do this for about an hour or so and for about 1-2 weeks and you should see some moderate results.

I've been doing this for about 2 months and I've already lost 15lbs, I need to get in shape for the Army so thats why.

If you have a fairly good amount of weight to lose i.e. over 20lb, drop that shit right now and start longer sessions of cardio. I'm not against SQUATZ, but cardio is your key to losing fat.

Thanks for the advice. I'm in a situation right now that I can't get out much, so I'm mostly looking for something that I can do from home. But I'll definitely get on that in a few months when I'm able to.

Thats why I'm asking for something better. I mean... I can just do random jogging in place, jumping jacks that kind of stuff, but if I don't get a serious program it's pretty difficult for me to gauge how much I should do. I'm a little too new at this.

can't you walk outside for at least an hour?

I like how people say they don't have the time (no offense OP) but think about how much time you personally spend watching TV or playing video games or even browsing 4chan. You could definetly spend some of that time instead outside.

It's unnerving at first because you constantly wonder if people are staring or what not but actually they don't care and you get used to that. Think about it, when you see a jogger do you give a shit?

There isnt a specific program when it comes to cardio (IMO). If you go to a gym and use a cross trainer or treadmill they can adjust the speed automatically with difficulty programs. I basically just do 10 programs at home on my cross trainer i.e. 40 mins worth of cardio then im back later for another 6 programs in the afternoon. I just try to build it up from there to push myself harder and harder to keep the cardio intense.

Can you join a gym or buy equipment?

Yeah I know. Honestly it's not about time, it's just... I'm living in the second hottest place in the US next to death valley. It's literally going to be life threatening to be outside for more than 20 minutes here in about a month, all the way till August when it finally starts cooling down. Everyone here is either really fat, or really skinny. And a solid 95% of the skinny ones are that way because of drug abuse. In short, I don't wanna be fatty, but I'm not going to do something life threatening because of it. I'll get on jogging when I move in a couple months, I just need something to do till then.

Good to know, Maybe I'll just pull one of the machines we have into my room and spend a while on that every day. I don't know what it's called, but we have one of those thats sorta like an exercise bike mixed with a treadmill... if that makes any sense.

Its a cross trainer, same as what i use except mins is bulkier, but it does the same job. Its a great workout for 2 reasons:

1 - Its not a treadmill. Treadmill puts too much strain on ankles and knee's and you generally feel like crap if you keep hitting it over and over with strain on your legs. Cross trainer you dont lift your feet, its less pressure on the joints.

2 - Its not a bike. It uses your whole body weight as resistance in a workout and does your upper body aswell, though personally i think its weak on the upper body.

A great machine for losing weight imo, if it has resistance programs that usually last around 4-5 mins build them up to get 40-60 mins done per day.

Mines old haha, doesn't even have a digital counter on it. But thanks, I'll definitely pull this sucker out and try to work my way up to spending about that long on it each day. Worse comes to worse it won't be quite what I'm looking for and I will still get a bit more fit while doing it. Win win.

Well thanks for all your help everyone who helped.

While we are on the subject you can give him long, brisk walks or go jogging with him if he is behaved enough to stay with you, my 2 puppies arent.

On a really long leash, definitely. But he is the fastest dog I've ever seen. Runs like a rabbit too (Like front two paws at once and back two at once jumping like). He has to go real slow for me to keep up haha. But that's another thing I will do once I can go out jogging again.
