What are the benefits of a front squat as opposed to a back squat?
less strain on your back
look cooler
front squats put less pressure on the back. they also work quads more due to more backwards center of gravity. works supporting muscles also (for balance)

Can I mix them in with sets of back squats or are they best done separately?
sure why not. i've seen it done, but most people choose only one per workout. doesnt really make much sense to do both.
Quads. Don't use them as a replacement, unless you like neglecting your glutes and hamstrings. And you're only really putting stress on your back if you're doing it wrong in the first place
you can't lift as much as with backsquats.your abdominals get worked more.less strain on back, which is cool if you plan to deadlift too.
