Hi /fit/.
What is the best way to calculate the amount of calories I burn on a given day?

Is there some massive database out there that gives me a calorie output per hour per activity?

Or is it heart-rate dependent (in which case.. what should I buy to monitor my heart rate?). If this is the case, how to I calculate my caloric burn based on my heart rate?

Try Venuto's book.

There are expediture formulas in there based on your general activity level. Also, some websites can itemize everything that you do.. for the OCD among us.

Get a fitday account. Not only can you track the calories that you eat, but it also has an activities section. You can tell it what lifestyle you have (couch potato, moderately sedentary, active etc) and then you can itemize all your activities and their duration (weights, running, swimming etc) . It then calculates your net calorie deficit/surplus. Not sure how accurate it is though ...
