For improving stamina, I've heard a few series of HIIT a week followed by one or two long distance runs for about 1,5 or 2 hours in medium pace will be best. The HIIT is to improve your muscles' ability to take in the limited oxygen it gets, while the long distance is for allowing your lungs to follow your muscles' progress; that is to say, expand your lung capacity.
It makes sense to me.
