Advice on workout timing Anonymous
My usual routine is working out 4 times per week sometime in the 8-11 pm time range. I lift for about 30 or 45 minutes and then run for 20 or 30 minutes. At the end of these workouts I am completely exhausted and I take a shower and then eat a decent sized meal. Then I do something passive (i.e. TV, internet, etc) for several hours before falling asleep at 3 am or so.

Is this counterproductive in any respects? I have heard it's better to do cardio and lifting at separate times, for instance, the reasoning I guess being that each can be done harder by itself or whatever. I am toying with the idea of waking up at 7 or 8 am and running most days and lifting in the evenings (roughly when I do already).

1) Would this timing be superior to my current schedule, and why?

2) If I follow this regimen, when should I be eating or not eating to maximize the fat loss from cardio and muscle building from lifting? Should I eat something light like a banana before running in the morning and then have my breakfast when I finish?

Thanks.

I don't see much wrong with your current schedule--other than the fact that if you're toying with the idea of waking up at 7 or 8, then you shouldn't be going to sleep at 3. If you want to try something different, you can try using the running as a warm-up before lifting, but running in the morning would definitely have it's advantages, including like you said, you can go at it a bit harder. In terms of nutrition, however, I would definitely eat before and after!! It's not eating that's the problem with weight, it's what you eat! If you eat something nutritious before and after (and the rest of the day) you'll be well on your way! Try to get 6 meals during the day, and try to keep each meal balanced (1/2 plate greens, 1/4 each lean meat and carbs), and strive for about 30g of protein per meal. You'll cut up in no time! Enjoy!

Yeah, obviously I will go to bed much earlier if I follow through on the morning cardio idea. I'm still not sure about something, though -- does eating too close to working out (either right before or right after) lessen your gains because that food is being burned off rather than existing fat? Or does that not matter?

I'm not overweight, by the way (5'10, 175), just looking to improve my definition and eliminate the slight bulge around my waist. I already eat healthy, moderate meals -- it's more a question of when to eat them in relation to exercise.
