I have just started a weight lifting program. I would like to know, what are the most important supplements and when should they be taken. At the moment I am on some whey that I tend to take in place of a meal (I try 5-6 meals a day)

P.S. I am on a budget, so please no tons and tons of different supplements to be taken 42 times daily.
>> Anonymous
To be completely honest, you don't need any supplements. What I take is Kre-alkalyn (one in the morning and one before workouts) and I also use some whey protein because I don't eat enough protein daily. But yeah you don't really need any. Ensure to get your protein after a workout and eat something for energy before.

If you are just starting then you don't need supplements you will gain lots just by food. Maybe get some Whey and multi-vit.

get em cheap online

Okay thanks guys. I am taking my bog standard pharmacy multi vits (they contain cod liver oil also).

Obviously because of my budget, I am limited on how many servings of whey a day. When is the best time to have it?

whenever you don't have time for/don't feel like preparing a real meal

I wouldn't do that because each meal should be balanced with carbs and vegetables. If I do count that as a "meal" then I'd be up to 7-8 meals a day...

holy shit $120, what a ripoff.

Even Costco has EAS 100% for much less and it's BETTER than GNC's. and online for even cheaper

Really? You got a link?
>> Anonymous
Yeah I'm never quite sure if I should be using my protein shake to REPLACE a skipped meal or using it on top of meals. I think I shall try having it post workout, as well as a meal.
>> Anonymous
Yeah, I do it on top of. I've been steadily building for about a year now. Try different things out, see what works for you.

Will do, thanks /fit/

http://www.a1supplements.com/100-Whey-Protein-Gold-10-Lbs.-p-2116.html

-It's better than GNC because they make Whey Isolate online no concentrate or any other low grade whey.
-It's also the "standard" whey product most bodybuilders use.

A lower grade Whey which just might be on par with GNC is EAS. Even this is cheaper got mine at Costco for $35 for 5lbs

You use either of them?

>>83403

so put carbs in your protein shake.

i usually toss in a couple of bananas, one or two scoops of whey, a big spoonful of peanut butter, apples occasionally and also oats.

In that case, I would count it as a meal.

For British/UK

Myprotein has been around for a long time they've bumped up the whey quality by adding BCAA's (amino acids) and other crap to increase digestion. lots of people on EU fitness forums use it

If you want to go with name brands

Same stuff that Americans build but it costs more to ship it all the way. I don't know any Europe specific brands so do some research on your own.

Hi, I have heard only good things about myprotein.co.uk. I think I shall use them, thanks. However, which one? There are so many on there.

For example, there is

"Whey protein" http://www.myprotein.co.uk/mp-max/whey-protein/

"Impact Whey Isolate"
http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-supplies/unflavoured-whey/impact-whey-isolate-(unflavoured)/

Impact Whey Protein, Milk Protein Concentrate, Hemp Protein...etc..the list is endless!

tl;dr wtf ?:o Which protein!?
>> Anonymous
>>83635

That first one is a blend of isolate(good whey) and concentrate (lower grade) it also says 77% whey which means rest is something else. You would want the Whey (from milk) unless you are a vegetarian then get hemp/soy etc.

Second is 100% isolate which is perfect.

It's worth giving e-bay a look, you may get lucky and find something cheap

Okay, I think I shall go with the Impact Whey Isolate then.
However, what do you think of their formula "Hurricane XS" for a beginner?

ctive Ingredients (per serving):
# Creapure® Creatine: 5g
# L-Glutamine: 5g
# HMB: 1.5g

Ingredients: Protein Blend (Impact Whey Protein, Impact Whey Isolate), Carbohydrate Blend (Dextrose, Ultra Fine Scottish Oats), L Glutamine, Creapure®, HMB (beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyric acid).
>> Anonymous
The reason I ask about Hurricane XS BTW is that it states it is suitable to use as a meal replacement.

Considering I am going to be using a shake for either post workout shake or as a meal replacement, is Hurricane or Impact Whey Isolate the way to go?

Thanks again.

Everything sounds good, except for the HMB which I have no idea what it is... have you ever taken Creatine? If you're responsive to creatine then it's worth it, otherwise it's not gonna help you.

>>83656Okay, I think I shall go with the Impact Whey Isolate then.

Hmm, I think this is slightly better than that Impact one.

You already have Whey it's got all the stuff in it.

you are paying for Oats, Dextrose i don't know about the UK but there's bulk stores here that sell it for $2 for years worth

Creatine get it in bulk http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/creatine/creatine-monohydrate/

glutamine, don't really need it. just speeds muscle recovery unless you're workout everyday.

Reading up on this HMB stuff, it does sound interesting. Check it out

vitamin c
magnesium
calcium?

Err, believe it or no the body makes plenty of those itself. not even bodybuilders care about eating this enzyme or that amino. It's just more money for minute effects if any.

I got my whey protein from there. I think it was like £26 for 2kgs of 80%

Starting off, 100% Whey Protein is all you need. Make sure you get something that is low cal. If a 30g of protein serving has more then 200 calories it is no good and it will make you fat.

Do a lot of cardio to lean up, or you are never going to see the results of all that hardwork. I spend 3x the time on cardio as I do on weight training. Being <8% body fat is worth every second of it.

If you get more serious, L-glutamine and creatine are the next step. They dont make you stronger or bigger, they let you train harder and recover faster.

For the protein I have used ON100% Whey for a long time. I think it tastes great and it does the job. I eat pinto beans in meals 2x a day. They are dirt cheap and you can do almost anything with them.

>P.S. I am on a budget, so please no tons and tons of different supplements to be taken 42 times daily.

You don't need anything except food.

>>83421
holy shit, last time i bought 100% whey it was $100 for 2.2kg's. Thanks anon
>> Anonymous
>>84448
8% bodyfat doesn't mean anything. fuck 8% bodyfat. Worry about getting stronger.

bodybuilding is for faggots.

I think I might actually be doing too much cardio. I do HIIT for 30 mins, 3 times a week and play tennis 3 times a week for 2 hours. And I'm eating about 2000 calories a day (my BMR is 1800). I think I should be eating a lot more...

I don't mean 30 mins non stop. I mean 2x15 minute sessions with warm-ups and warmdowns included.
