If you were not walking last week and you start walking this week, but you keep the same diet, you will start to lose weight.
Walking is good if you cannot jog, jogging is good if you cannot run. If you are not a comfortable runner, you will not exercise very long and end up being less active overall, not to mention that most sports related injuries are from running.
As a grad student myself, get a cheap bike ($100 or less) and use the extra time you save travelling to go even further and faster.
