Ok, let me get this straight about HIIT Anonymous
Ok, so I want to get into this and start doing this instead of jogging, as this is apparently way more effective.

So, from what I read, its 20 seconds of going as fast as you can, followed by 10 seconds of rest, then repeated for a full thing of 8. Then...thats it for the day. So, if you warmed up for 5 minutes, and cooled down for 5 minutes, you'd be doing cardio a total of 14 minutes every other day?

I heard it was effective because it works to create an "Oxygen deficiency" in your body. So, am I right to say that the reason it's effective, is because you aren't really giving your body time to rest and breath, so your blood isn't oxygenating your muscles the appropriate amount, and therefore your body ends up doing more work and you feel tired for longer because your body is working even after you're done exercising to put more oxygen back into your muscles?

Sorry for the run-on sentences, I just want to make sure this is right. Also, sorry for being ignorant on this subject.

Picture unrelated.

Oh, cool bro.

Anyways OP, about your question. You pretty much have the right idea about what to do and how it works. However, don't take HIIT very lightly just because it's just 14 minutes with the only hard part being the shortest part. You'll see why people only do it 2-3 times a week the first time you try it out, but I'm sure you'll get used to it fast.

YOU'RE DONG IT WRONG

Your gonna die sprinting for that long, switch those numbers to something like 10 sprint/30 rest. No clue about the science, but it screws with your heart rate which in turn makes your metabolism work harder all day. At least that's what it feels like for me.

No. You are depleting your glycogen sources (fast twitch) which is the preferred energy source of the body. After you do that, your body must seek different sources of energy, namely, body fat.

This explains why it is difficult to lose fat, as it is NOT the preferred source of energy. The reason our bodies are like this is to keep us alive during "Survival" times when there is no available food. We then can rely on our body fat.

Oxygen deficiency is not really related to HIIT. Otherwise, we could just breathe into brown paper bags for a while, and get fit. (And wouldn't that be nice)

Please go on! I need clarification!

I do 45 seconds of fast as I can followed by 1 min 15 of medium effort. I started off doing 20-30 seconds fast as I can followed by 1-30-40 medium effort. Remember to warm up and warm down

So ideally, it'd be logical/more effective to do it earlier in the day?

Make that 10 seconds of going fast and 20 seconds of rest. You'll look like a retard if you're running outside but at least you'll be a /fit/ retard.

Also, when I say rest, I mean like light walking or slowing down. Don't stop completely, you need to get rid of all that lactic acid built up in your muscles.

Not necessarily. If you burn it off in the morning, you will go all day burning fat provided you do not inturrupt the fat burning, true.

Also, if you do it at night, you will go several hours of fasting, and will likely burn fat as well during that time. (think "hyperfasting" instead of just "sleep fasting")

I am sure people prefer to do their exercise during the morning, because rapid and explosive movements release stimulating hormones into the blood stream. This could affect your ability to have a restful sleep.

In all honesty, I really doubt if it matters outside of preference, but I am sure there are people that have very strong opinions about it. Ultimately, the goal is to deprive yourself of the bodies most preferred energy source. Whether or not you deplete it in the morning or evening is not really the point.

Even with less time actually running, I'd only go for 8 times?

I see. Does that mean one could do it every day, as opposed to every other?

In addition, Its getting cold, and we have an elliptical machine that I plan to use instead of outside running. I assume this makes little difference, but I just want to make sure that it would still be logical for HIIT.

You will likely overtrain. Most cannot do that. You could probably build up to it though, after time. To try this out, just do it the following day. If you are too torn up, you can't.

HIIT is just that "training". It really doesn't matter what you are doing as long as you get the right amount of explosive training. It could be stairs, elliptical, sex, etc. Most of us use running because it is high stress, and easy to do under duress. I have a hill behind my house. I burn my shit ragged on that. Whatever works for you.
