hi /fit/ :)
This is my first time visiting this board, so I'm not sure if this place will actually be able to help me, but it seems to be a better place than /n/ to post this, so here goes.

I've not ridden a bike in 6 years, and I've decided that I want one now. I'd use it for getting around, but mostly for hanging around with friends (who go out a lot to blaze). I'm not necessarily buying one for fitness, but no-one I know has a decent bike, so none of them know what I should buy, or anything about any of the manufacturers, or even how much it'll cost (I'm in the UK).

Are there any manufacturers who make decent, cheap bikes? Also, should I get a BMX or a mountain bike? Is there an inbetween?

Thanks :)

just go to a proper bike shop tell them what you plan to do with it, they will measure you and get you set up with a good bike

How much do bikes usually cost? I've got a budget of about £150 or so ($280 or so).

Will that be enough to get something new which is usable?

it should as long as, like you say, you don't ask anything too special on it. otherwise, bikes can get pretty expensive.

certainly just tell the bike shop owner your price range

should last 5-10 years depending how well you take care of it

and be sure to test ride it may have to leave collateral like your drivers liscence but its worth it to make sure it fits you

okay, thankyou :D
one last thing: what do you mean by "special things"? I didn't realise you could make a bike get really expensive unless you want a proper racing bike.

moutain bikes can get pretty expensive. one of my best friends loves to go mountain biking and he spends THOUSANDS on his bike. everything from a lighter frame, brake pads, chains etc.

ahh, i see. Well, I think i'll get a mountain bike because I'm fairly tall (6'2''), and considxering my age (lol), i'm really only set to get taller. I'd look like a clown riding one of those tiny bikes if i rode a BMX, I think.

Doesn't sound like i'll be in need of any of that custom stuff, though.

Thanks :D

If you're gonna be using it to mainly get places, try for a road bike. I have a Raleigh, and love it. Bianchi, Trek, and Giant are all very good brands too, but expensive. Mountain bikes, on the other hand, I'd recommend Kona. BMX, I have no experience with. So you're on your own for that one.

Schwinn sold their name to Wal-Mart and Wally now hocks bikes with "Schwinn" on for around that price. I've been riding one for a year or so now, it's pretty okay.

My roommate has a Schwinn that he got from Target. Rear derailleur snapped in half after two weeks. You see, Schwinn used to be good. Real good. Then they sold their name to Wal-Mart and now all of their bikes are made in China.

tl;dr - Schwinn used to be good, but no more.

This post has the most of the correct in it.

You can still find oldtype Schwinn bikes in shops but they're rarer and thus almost certainly more expensive than even their notable quality merits alone.

Never buy a bike from anywhere like walmart or any department store. They are complete utter fucking shit.

Go to a bike store, where they you know, sell real bikes, and take your pick there.

google "ibis bow-ti"
shit is the motherfucking bomb. cross country bike, weighs <20lbs, fucking amazing. Ive borrowed my friend's ibis multiple times and it is really easy to rape on. for serious, op grab a basic crosscountry bike. my GT i-drive is really good, but it ran me a bit over $500. I also have a road bike, which is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH faster. A ride on the road from my house to the ballpark across the bay takes 2:30 on my mountain bike and 2:00 on my road bike. but, the raod bike was $600.

tl;dr, discuss your needs with the people AT YOUR FUCKING BIKESHOP
