Hey /fit/

Not sure if this is the place to ask such a question, but its health related.

Acne... its annoying as hell and bad for self esteem. Any suggestions on eradicating this menace to my face/neck?

i used to ad still do to a certain, alot more mild extent. i found by useing face wash with benzoyl peroxide helps heaps. use it religiously only at night to begin with cos it dryes your face out quite a bit but once your face starts to get used to it you may want to use it twice a day. also you can buy creams with the same stuff in it. it won't make them completely go away but it sure gets rid of alot of them

I never had a problem with acne, but my cousin did. She got it to a manageable state but it took alot of work.

1. She lived near the ocean and would spent at least 45 minutes - 2 hours in the water almost every day.
2. She completely cut out sweets (basically anything with processed sugar)
3. She cut down on meat (red meat once a week at most) and started eating more fruits and veggies. She also stopped eating out completely.
4. She started to work out more and would bathe right after working out. She would also take 2 showers a day.

It wasn't the perfect solution since she would still have breakouts once in a while, but it's expected. There's really only so much you can do about acne.

I'll check at the chemist then. The stuff I use now contains Benzyl Alcohol and Benzyl Benzoate... But that's mainly just to unclog pores and shit.
I think one of my main problems is that I cant leave them alone. I wonder how much of an effect contact with the hands has on spreading it?

Don't touch them. That makes the problem way worse. If you HAVE to pop them (I understand that compulsion) then use a tool like the one in my pic. Between every zit sterilize it in a shallow bath of alcohol.

Accutane. Do not take any other advice. Thank me later.

You have to take into consideration that your acne may not actually be acne. There's many things that can cause bumps on your face that look and behave much the same as your common zit.

Personally, I had some problems with staph - after being prescribed some antibiotics, the staph infection AND the bumps on my face (which turned out to be staph, not acne) cleared up.

You really should see a dermatologist if you want it gone badly.

Im an ausfag, so maybe you could explain what happened there?
Though I have a friend who went on accutane, and she seemed to have the usual standard side effects. Apparently it was a terrible time while she was on her course, and recommended I never touch it since my acne is only 'mild'.

OP, what I noticed about my acne was that if I:
1) Have a normal sleep pattern, ie wake up and go to sleep everyday at the same time
2) Cut out all trans fat
3)Get your daily Vitamin D from sun exposure
4) Drink alcohol once in a while

Then it gets A LOT better.

Reasoning
1) Sleeping 8-9 hours didn't seem to matter as much as staying on schedule, even on weekends. I used to get 4 hours of sleep at night for 5 months for my work, always 12 am-4-am, but my skin was never clearer.
2) Trans fat is nasty, all the bad effects it has on your body. I think scientists got eating sugar mixed up with consuming transfat as the cause for pimples.
3) Daily sun exposure is key. Scientists in Israel discovered that a certain wavelength in sunlight actually kills the bacteria that forms under the skin that causes acne. They then created a machine/service called ClearLight that only uses that wavelength to treat your face. But don't be a sucker, you can just go outside for the same results.
4) I've heard stories that alcohol will also kill the bacteria on you face, but I'm not sure if its fact. But what I do notice is that when I go out drinking, my face is clearer (and paler) the next morning.

Hope this helps, I know acne is a real self-esteem killer.

However, if you work a night shift like some of us, (I don't know if that's the case with you or not) getting your daily dose of sunlight can be tricky. Tanning beds are an alternative, and yes, they've helped make improvements in my acne before.

That's called dehydration.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Heres a pic of my condition (in b4 greasy wog skin) It may only be mild, but that doesn't matter, it still effects my self esteem.

I think I'll take a few of these suggestions on board, and I'll definately go see a dermatologist. It seems a lot of it comes down to just being healthier in general though.

Drinking lots of water is apparently helpful too.

tea tree oil. There is nothing else quite like it. Buy those makeup removal cotton pad thinghies and a bottle of it. put some tea tree oil on the makeup removal pad, and wipe the grease away from your face.

Wait till the oil 'dries', rinse with cold water.

While it will not help with acne if you really do have a case of acne (which in the pic it doesn't look like it), it will definitely help control oil buildup on your face.

OP, if you want to rid yourself of it, listen to me right now.

Accutane.

I'm on it now. Two weeks ago my face was in a real bad state with acne. I was so sick of it I just wanted to break down and cry. I decided to go on accutane to try and rid myself of it once and for all.

Only two weeks in and the results are incredible. Yes my face can get a little dry, but use a non comedogenic moisturizer after you wash your face in the morning and at night and you'll have no problem. Your lips may tend to get a little dry too so lip balm is good. Lastly, drink a good amount of water every day and get proper rest.

Trust me if your acne is bad enough (I'm assuming it's not as bad as mine was) accutane will change your life for the better.
