It all depends on the person who is teaching it to you, and the people there who train with you.
And as for what martial, it's up to you. You'll find (when you take away the pissing contest) that many stand up styles are very, very similar, Most aspects of karate, Mauy Thai, Savate, kickboxing, they all use basically the same techniques and excersises. If you put the effort in they will all be very benifitial in the way of self-defense. BJJ, Judo, Sambo etc have very much blended together since the MMA inception, so any of those would also be great.
But yeah, all that means nothing if you train with people who don't have a clue, don't train hard, or have an inflated ego. I reccomend looking around, going to a class or two and checking it out before you commit.
