Dear /fit/,

I have a few questions and I hope you could give me your input on them.

I started working out yesterday and I did about 45 minutes of working out [I started slow in which I did some cardio biking, pulldowns, maching row etc], then I went swimming for about a half hour.

Today I just went swimming for 45 minutes and I could FEEL the burn in my arms/abs (why my abs?) but not my legs. This leads me to a few questions..

1. I've heard that swimming is good because it works your whole body. Thus I was thinking that I could do 30 minutes of straight cardio (biking/running to work up my legs and get my body "going") and then going swimming for about 45 minutes. Would this work, or is what I did yesterday better?

2. When I get home I find that I am simply RAVENOUS for food. However, I get home about an hour before I go to bed so I don't think eating is such a good idea. Should I just wait it out till next morning?

3. This is kind of a miscellaneous question as in I've heard of taking fish oil capsules as well as whey protein... How does it help as well as what are some guidelines? Like protein turns into fat when your metabolism isn't going, etc.

Thanks for you help!

Swimming is great! It burns loads of calories. Try chilling in the sauna afterwards.

As soon as you can stuff something down your throat. Your body needs protein and carbs to heal itself from the training. Something like Fish and a baked potato.

Do the swimming, and add on some SQUATZ and DEADLIFTZ. Eat lightly, and then eat a big breakfast. Someone else will answer your 3rd question.

1. you just started. why not go for a few weeks before deciding you want to make changes? get committed and make sure you're gonna stick with this before making big plans just to quit in 2 weeks when you decide you hate swimming.

2. a quick, high protein meal (~30g protein) and vegetables immediately after with a big glass of water takes care of the craving.

3. fish oil is great to supply necessary fats if you're eliminating other sources of healthy fat from your diet (like from red meat, olive oil etc.).

When I was younger I would swim every chance I get. There is absolutely no way of me quitting swimming. There's just something about the water that's so relaxing.. (plus the steam room/sauna/hot tub are a HUGE bonus)

So basically I should eat something that either has protein or is a veggie/fruit? Yesterday I had 2 bananas and that was good enough.

i was not being literal and the you're missing the point. get more than 1 day of experience with a workout plan before changing it.

now, read these two sentences:

first mine : >>high protein meal (~30g protein) and vegetables

now yours: >> i should eat something that either has protein or is a veggie/fruit?

see the difference? one has an "and", the other an "or". they're not interchangeable.

the protein is for muscle health and growth. the vegetables are for fiber and vitamins. i don't see ~30 g protein coming from 2 bananas. but if you can't tell the difference between "and" and "or" maybe i'm just wasting my time.

don't you mean 'and' OR 'or'? ;)

eh, eh? ;)
