Sup fit, I have a question concerning bikes. Yeah, I know that is what /n/ is for, but this is more concerning my ability to ride them. I am 250 lbs. and only just recently got into biking, where the last time I have done it was in middle school (freshmen in college) when I weighed considerably less. Now, I have no problems riding bikes nowadays (it is true that you never forget how), but my problem is this. Hills. They are my bane when I am biking. Unless I have the speed built up, it is a real bitch to ride up a hill, starting at even the smallest inclines. And if the hill is more than 40 ft in length or so, I usually end up having to stop and walk my bike up hill like an asshat. I have no problems with walking (and theoretically biking) long distances, as I have been actively walking atleast 1.8 miles a day (sometimes up to six walking the same route a couple of times). I was hoping to bike to my Community College this year (which is about 3.37 miles away according to Google Earth's nifty measuring software that is helping me procrastinate on my english paper), but the hills in my neighborhood (the last of which through a pretty messy intersection where people like to run the stop signs; not a good place to stop biking.) prevent me from doing so. What exercises can I do to increase my ability to ride, besides the obvious riding. What muscle groups?

tl;dr want to become a better bike but I cannot go up hills so I want to know what exercises I can do to improve my abilities in supplement to actually biking.

Stand up and put all of your considerable weight on the pedals when going up hill.

The only way to get better at cycling is cycling.

I have been, gradually. I have been walking every night (like I said, about 1.8 to 4, maybe 6 miles depending on my mood) for maybe about a year and a half to two years now. The biking is meant to help me lose more weight.

Thanks, this sounds like a really good idea, and it is what I would do when i was younger now that I think about it. Just hope I have the balance :P

But I was hoping that there would be something I could do that could enhance my efforts in addition to getting some serious biking in. Like an exercise that helps make the leg muscles that biking uses stronger.

Unless you're riding a single speed or some awful style of cruiser, you should be able to get up a hill no matter how out of shape you are. Rule of thumb is that if you can get up it once without dismounting then you can get up it every time.
