Hey /fit/, serious question. What do you guys think of jumping rope. I'm trying to diversify my cardio routine (started out with just running, added in some stationary biking, a little eliptical, plyometrics, rowing, etc) and was wondering if jump ropes would help? I'm currently trying to lose 35 lbs of weight (went from 230 and now 215 in ~ 15 weeks, trying to get down to 180). I tried doing jump ropes but the pain in my lower legs and ankles spring up way before I even get tired from exhaustion (like from my lungs when I do a sprint or something). Am I still a little too heavy to be doing jump ropes and should I lose a little weight before I begin it? I am also flat footed, and I feel like I'm constantly applying a lot of pressure when I jump, instead of it being smooth like when you see the boxers do it. Comments please.

jump rope > running > cycling

Land on the balls of your feet.
I do 3 sets of 3 minutes with 30 rest periods in between each set.

I jump rope religiously, sometimes between sets of bodyparts that i want to define more (back, delts, triceps in particular). Great cardio exercise, helps with coordination, speed, and horizontal cuts if you play a sport that requires such. Personally, just bought a leather weighted Weider rope from a store yesterday, straightening it over my door after dousing with water.

tl;dr: Good choice, anon. And land on your toes for most benefit-really kills your calves, and allows you to build up speed-kind of like sprinting on your toes as opposed to running flatfooted.

if you are trying to get fit doing 3min with 30min rest isnt going to do anything

most you should take is 5min break between sets and do for 30min

so you would be doing atleast 5-7 sets

OP here, the main question I was trying to pose was: should I do this at 215? I feel like I'm still pretty heavy when I do jumps, and I'm worried about my ankles, knees, etc. I've started but can only do about 30 seconds, not because I'm short of breath, but because I land pretty heavily and my ankles start to hurt... should I start slow and then move up or just wait til I'm maybe 200-195ish?

So what is a good jump rope routine? It is way more high intensity than running so I wouldn't think that you'd be able to jump rope 30 minutes straight.

Do you jump for 30 minutes and break it up into 5 minute chunks, 3 minute chunks??
