Oat Recipes? Anonymous
Dearest /fit/, I took your word and bought a big canister of Oats. Now I'm wondering...

What are some good breakfast recipes that use oats and why would you use them?

Right now, I'm just microwaving a bowl of oats+water+pinch of salt. Then I toss in some raisins and add milk with a little sugar. I'm just looking to eat healthier and maybe lose a little weight.

Also, whats the difference between Quick Oats and Old Fashioned?

All I know is that it can help you live... a better life.

Quick oats are processed further than other oats to speed up the cooking process. They're not as good for you.

are these good for me too?

I believe the soluble fiber is the high point about oats... uber good for you.

I eat oats everyday, for example with milk, honey and a sliced banana
delicious if you ask me

Cook the oats and then mash in a banana and mix in some cinnamon. That gives a really sweet taste to it without making it unhealthy.

Or just add inordinate amounts of honey.

I never found a delectable way to eat them. I'm interested in this. Any more ideas? I guess they're just dry by themselves, I could only manage to sprinkle them onto something else more flavorful.

Is there a specific brand of oats I should look out for?
The one that's not as processed.

How bad is it if you eat raw oats?

i don't know, i'm not dumb enough to try it.

at a guess, your body won't be able to digest it properly and you'll excrete the whole fucking lot. or puke it back up.

do it.

Quick oats have been passed through a roller to make them thinner so they cook faster. There is no nutritional difference, however, there can be a physical difference and quick oats will be softer and make a mushier mixture.

Raw (green) oats can kill horses and livestock. If you can keep then down without vomiting, they will give you nasty indigestion, acid reflux, flatulence, and unbroken particles will pass undigested into your bowel and cause micro-abrasions in your colon.

It never hurt me--and I used to eat raw oats every day.

I usually add walnuts or peanut butter to my oats. Oatmeal also tastes awesome with blueberries, blackberries, etc.
Here's what I do:

-Mix oatmeal with water and salt. (Add a bit extra water)
-When oatmeal is removed from the microwave, it should be thick or have only a little water.
Add berries and some more water. You might want to add half as much water as you added last time. It's also good to stir in walnuts/peanut butter/etc. at this stage.
-Microwave again for the same amount of time you did before. Microwaving again makes the berries "pop" which adds flavor to your oats.

You might have to tweak this depending on how thick you like your oatmeal.

Mixing boiling water with your oat recipe is superior to microwaving.

Or maybe it's just me, but when I try microwaving it tastes like shit compared to boiling.

If you have time then take some time and soak them in water or milk for 30ish minutes then cook them for 5 minutes in milk, add honey, almonds/nuts if you like.

If in a hurry. Soak them for 15 minutes in water then add milk and microwave it for 2 minutes. Done.

Hah. Done that a few times before going out. Take a handful and throw them down, drink milk or water. Done :)

Don't add sugar.

I like it with milk a lot more (little or no water), dunno if I'm getting too much milk but I doubt it

Lots of things go well with it, you can kind of mix and match

Cinnamon
Honey
Bananas
Berries
Nuts

Sometimes I experiment, I've made some awful stuff. Maple syrup = failed, lol. Vanilla was questionable (maybe with the right additional ingredients). Some flavors of syrups (for drinks/etc) work sometimes, but all mine have added sweeteners. Peanut butter sounds good, but mine sucked... I'll have to try again

I bet apple slices would work... so much work though, lol. I'd try strawberries too

What's wrong with sugar? 2 servings of brown sugar (roughly ZOMG30CALORIES) makes a world of difference in 2 servings of oatmeal. That's all I add to mine.

+30 calories/day = +10,950 calories/year = +3.12 pounds of fat/year

Multiply that by 10 years and you're 31.2 pounds heavier just for having two teaspoons of sugar a day. It adds up.

By that token I should cut out my veggies as well. That's another, like, 90 calories a day! Shit - I can skip meals, too! That'll put me back 500 more calories! I'LL LOSE WEIGHT SO FAST!

Yeah, I know sugar is "empty" while those other things are not, but assuming one's diet is already in order, anything you can add into the oatmeal will also go to waste. Especially fruits and honeys. They are sugar in disguise <.<

Fruit has vitamins. Sugar does not.

It doesn't work like that unless you store every single thing you eat, don't be foolish.

And? You could take a multi-vitamin instead and SAVE CALORIES! Wooo!

Quoting myself: "Assuming your diet is in order."

Too many vitamins and you'll just pee them out, leaving only the sugar. And if you're eating a well balanced diet, chances are you're getting more vitamins than you need.
