/fit/, I have a question

I know that it depends a lot on the school, instructor and shit, but generally speaking, which of the following martial arts is best for fitness?

Also, out of curiousity, which is best for streetfighting?

Tae Kwon Do
Aikido
Brazilian Jiu Jutsu
Jiu Jutsu
Wing Tzun
Judo
>> Anonymous
From what I've found so far, Wing Tzun would seem best for both

I'm not. Please, enlighten me

Wing tzun may get you fitter than the average couch potato, but you're not going to be able to defend yourself well. Chunners, from my experience get their asses beat by anyone who knows how to throw a punch. Do you do full contact sparring at your dojo?

For OP: For street combat, do either Muay Thai or boxing. You could balance that out with judo or bjj if you wanted. Though for multiple opponents, bjj isn't always the best option. Judo will teach you how throw well though. Ever been thrown shoulder or face first into concrete? You can imagine how effective that would be.

Stay away from Tae Kwon Do, many Mcdojos flow from that "art". Unless you live in korea, then go right ahead.

Aikido is usually pussy shit. It teaches joint-locks and the like, but the people that come out of Aikido are usually incompetent.

If you read the OP properly, you'd know that I was only asking which is best for streetfighting out of CURIOUSITY

Let me take this opportunity to point out that I'm NOT taking up a martial art just to get fit either. I'm already pretty fit and healthy. I just want to take up a new hobby and I'd like it to be the one that's the most physically demanding
>> Anonymous
>>420840

Well you might as well pick one that's useful AND gets you physically fit.

Also: You may not want to rely on a martial art for your sole fitness routine.

None of the arts listed is really that good for fitness. Out of what you listed I'd say that BJJ is probably the best.

For self-defence and all-around bad-assery, go with Judo. It is the SQUATZ of fighting.

TKD can be good if you get a really good school (very rare), Aikido is pretty much awful, and WT is pretty much awful.

Other good alternatives would be Shotokan/Kyokushin Karate, Sanda Kung Fu, Muay Thai/Kickboxing, boxing, Sambo, and pretty much all kinds of wrestling.

Thank you for the info kind sir

Boxing not good for fitness? You gotta be kidding.

Boxing requires more fitness than any of the others, because the fight (if there's no K.O.) lasts much longer.

Not saying that in the other sports people are not fit... but they don't depend on it so much.

Holy shit op. You just listed all the worst shit for street fightan!

Best learn how to run fast...because I always have a knife on me. And no, you aren't going to disarm me.

Boxing takes a lot of fitness, not not as much as kickboxing and certainly not as much as wrestling. Kicking is way more tiring than punching - I could box for 15+ 3min rounds and still be ready to go. Kickboxing I'm dead at 10-12. And wrestling is just... exhausting. They don't do all that conditioning for nothing.

Fitness: Judo or BJJ. They're pretty much the same (from each that i've went to). They usually wear you down quite a bit, so when you do randori (sparring) you won't have as much of a strength advantage, which encourages technique over power.

Streetfighting: Same thing. Jiu Jutsu can be pretty badass aswell, but it's sometimes hard to find a legit school

Kenpo + Krav Maga.

It depends more on the institution than the martial art. Go check how frequently they meet and how often they spar. My local judo club meets for two hours every week night and spend half of it sparring, and they do pretty good.

You mean women's self defense marketed to men?

Enjoy your Aikido, fucktard.

Krav Maga mother fucker

Personally I'd say that krav is pretty good as a self defence, but not very good for street fighting. It probably won't help you BEAT THAT KID DOWN, but it might give you the ability to get him down and hurt and you running.

-Blue belt level BJJ rendering a second degree blackbelt in TKD unconscious. Easily.
-Avid BJJ guy, knew his shit, attended for years, gets his ass handed to him by a Marine. The Marine was a diesel mechanic who, I shit you not, got honorable discharge for a non-combat related back-injury. Yes, the fight in question was after said injury
-I've done a lot of stuff, mostly TKD, ten years, didn't really distinguish myself, assistant instructor for kid's class, trying to get my teacher to sponsor my second degree blackbelt. I kicked the marine in the head, regular old round-house kick and he couldn't get back up for two minutes.
-Some scrawny Canadian kid, couldn't have been more than a hundred and seventy five pounds, took wrestling in high school, apparently no serious martial arts experience, squeaks past one of my kicks and locks me down immediately in a hold I can only describe as effective. If he'd wanted to, he could've blacked me out.

Moral of this story: "Best" doesn't belong to a school. It goes to individuals.

In before "bullshit, internet tough guy, etc etc" like someone's going to lie about ten years at some suburban belt factory. If I were going to lie, I'd have said capoeira or Gracie School Jiujitsu. Or Krav Maga which I know nothing about. My ignore gives it mystic power in my mind, not unlike placebos or religion.

Holy fuck! I'm now going to be a diesel mechanic. Also good job on using TKD.

^^^never wrestled or kickboxed apparently

Boxing, Kickboxing, and Wrestling are, as I've found, incredibly fucking tiring.

also OP, muay thai all the way.

Best for fighting:
Fuck If I know
>> Anonymous
okay, most fucks here dunno shit.

best for fitness; muay thai, boxing, capoeira (and everything else, as long as you are serious and have a good school)
best for streetfighting; Krav Maga, muay thai, bjj

now go train.

BJJ is terrible for street fighting, unless it's one-on-one and the guy doesn't want to hit your groin.
>> Anonymous
>>421883
I second Krav Maga and Muay Thai, and would add in Viet Vo.
BJJ on the other hand isn't good for street fights because its main focus is 1vs1 combat.

Kali is the best for a fight that I've seen. A friend of mine does it and even though he's a gaunt, sinewy motherfucker in a fight he's a tough son of a bitch. Its like a whole style built around getting in close and ending things quickly. No meditation or fancy jumps, just ugly and brutal. Its even nastier with a knife.

oh and Krav Maga is a massive gimmick.

but know what the best thing to have in a streetfight is? A gun. I carry a Springfield XD45 with me whereever I go. If 13 rounds of .45ACP arent enough to end a skirmish in an alley then someone better call the police and an ambulance because the shit has hit the fan.

greetings from /k/ by the way.

fuck yes it is. In my town there used to be quite a bit of crime but then the local government started allowing people to CC at any time as long as they had the permit and within a year the town cleaned up and became a wonderful haven. The gangs and drug pushers stopped harassing people when they started shooting back and with more and better guns than they had.

I consider any martial art is good for fitness. Bruce Lee supposedly studied Wing Chun, so you could say that would be what is the best from the list for streetfighting.

Here's some inspiration. Pay attention beginning at 4:02.

welcome to /k/

Any martial art that emphasizes physical fitness and body conditioning is good btw
>> Anonymous
>>421925
and by body conditioning i mean hardening structures and muscle memory
>> Little Busters !!cYRK7ZeKVyk
>>421915

While Wing Chun was Bruce Lee's background, he formed his own philosophy of JKD as an adult, which is basically pre-MMA.

Not that I'm bagging on Chinese kung fu, but there are more practical martial arts out there.
>> Anonymous
Judo and BJJ are the only acceptable options there. Also consider Muay Thai, Boxing and Wrestling.
>> Anonymous
Just practice all of them.

Look into Kyokushin...
It is fucking awesome!

OP here.

Wow, this thread is still up?

Well, basically I've got to choose between either Brazilian Jiu Jutsu or Judo, as all the other martial arts on the list clash with my lectures/seminars.

I just did some research on BJJ and it looks totally fucking gay, and since most people are telling me Judo is the best out of the list anyway, it looks like I'll be going with that.

Thanks for the feedback.

OP here.

For the record, I'm already a pretty experienced boxer, and I've also taken up kickboxing since I've arrived at uni.
