Lol, protein helps you gain mass... if you're trying to get abs, you'll need to lower your body fat so you can see the natural muscle under the layer of fat

protein helps you get muscle mass. The more muscle the more calories you burn and the more visible your abs are.
So, eating protein to sustain your muscle is a must at all times, wether cutting or bulking.

Also, you have to eat something, asshole. A mass building or fat losing diet should be highest in proteins. The only real difference is on a mass builder you need more carbs than on a fat loss.
