Hey /fit/

So a friend of mine does capoeira, and he invited me to join him for a trial lesson since I've been looking to get into some kind of martial art/sport/whatever to complement my lifting and get me all flexible and stuff.

It was utter shit. First of all, the lesson started with 15 minutes of standing in a circle making that weird racket they call music. I stood there clapping along, but I felt really awkward and uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to do that every lesson, but apparently that's part of the whole cultural thing. Speaking of which, I've never seen a sadder bunch of white people trying to be ethnic.

We did some fairly challenging calisthenics to warm up, but the capoeira itself just seems absolutely retarded. Maybe it would grow on me, but I'm definitely not willing to spend hours standing in a circle and clapping to find out.

So help me out here. What martial art should I start doing that's easy to get into, doesn't bother with cultural shit, and will make me able to kick ass if I so choose? In before boxing, that's definitely on my list but I'd prefer something that uses the legs as well.

tl;dr: Capoeira sucks, what's good?

Practice Gun Kata.
>> Negro Sparkle Faggot
Muay Thai.

The massive ass kicking is the cultural part. No joke.

Kickboxing?

You could do muay thai, but the stance you learn in muay is very prone to being taken down by grapplers, which is why kickboxing with standup striking from western boxing and kicks from kb and muay mixed is a little better imho.

YES. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increase to lethal proficiency makes the master of the gun katas an adversary not to be taken lightly.

OP here. I'm one of those rare /k/ommandos that actually owns a gun, so the shooting range is already in play. I'll admit that gun kata looked pretty cool in Equilibirum, but it's also the most retarded fictional martial art ever. Shit, gymkata is more believable.

Anyway I'm not looking to start a martial art so I can defend myself (though that would be a nice side effect), I just want to become hard as fuck and functional training only does so much. I need something to shake it up a bit.

Muay thai and western kickboxing both sound promising, I'll look into that. Does anyone have an opinion on eskrima?

Judo or BJJ if you're into grappling

Muay thai or boxing if you're into striking.

Sambo or normal MMA if you want to have a mix of both.

>>461494
Also, you can give Combat Sambo, Systema or Krav maga a try if you want more self defense orientated stuff but those tend to vary in quality from school to school.

GTFO yourself. This is definitely /fit/ material, it's not like I'm asking which martial art is the best to fight ninjas, I'm asking which is best to become fit and hard as fuck.

I knew that already. Anyone have an opinion beyond that?

Thailand kick boxing.

They practice by kicking tress with your bare shin. And actually encourage you to break your feet a few times to strengthen them.

Also, on the note of Krav Maga, most of the trained stuff is generally all on the defensive. It teaches normal people great stress drills for dealing with situations that happen a lot e.g. a guy gets you in an overarm headlock and starts punching you in the face.

But to actually kick ass you need to learn to use your body as a weapon better. Which means learning striking and grappling (as most fights in real life will end up on the floor, and the first time you put a nigger in a triangle will be better for all concerned).

So, to reiterate, muay thai on its own has slightly too many rules to be the best sport to learn. Learn western boxing to learn to strike, and combine it with kickboxing, muay thai, and brazillian jiu jitsu, sambo, and if you can find it a gym that tries to combine these all into an mma class.

all that bjj/mma crap is fine if you're looking to play sports, but for real-deal self defense, do yourself a favor and learn gung-fu. It's been around for thousands of years, and is a true martial art, unlike all the flavor-of-the-month "arts" like krav maga, bjj, mma, etc.

You'll learn perfect striking technique, and learn how to bring your chi power out by melding the mind and body. My Sifu can break a cinderblock 20 feet away just by focusing his chi power when he stomps on the ground. I have no doubt that I would easily defeat any of these UFC wanna-bes with their worthless grappling.

Fuck you, Capoeria is awesome. I admit the chanting at the beginning is not for everyone (I felt really weird first time, then started getting really into it. It helps when there are actually brazillians in the group and not just white dudes).

The exercise though is fantastic for working out your core and legs. Capoeria gets you fucking lean and improves dexterity and flexibility better than most other martial arts. It's the least practical though.

I recommend either traditional Wushu/Kung-fu or Muai Thai. If you want to jump higher and practice fancier, but less practical, things, go for Kung-fu. More aggressive, hard hitting style, Muai Thai.

OP here, I know that capoeira is awesome for fitness, I just have a really hard time getting into cultural stuff I'm not interested in. Call me xenophobic if you will, but I don't like to pretend I'm something I'm not, and I definitely don't like to stand in a circle with people who do.

I had a talk with the instructor after the lesson and he said he'd done a lot of different martial arts, but settled on capoeira because it was the most challenging. He had a violet corda, whatever the hell that means. Also, he was built like a tank but could still do stuff I couldn't dream of doing.

I told my friend who'd brought me that I'd maybe think of starting capoeira in 20 years or so, when I'd want to maintain flexibility. I don't think there's anything better for that, except maybe being a gymnast,

Anyway, I think I'll give Muay Thai a go for now.

I take Shotokan karate. Not much cultural stuff in that except Japanese words/counting, the seiza position, and formal bowing. You could also try judo, lots of grappling.

@OP:

Former capoeria fag here. Capoeria is either something you like or dont like. Acrobatics, dance, samba with hot girls and some "martial arts" (acrobatics) is pretty cool. But if you want to learn to fight, don't do capoeria it just sucks for that. If you want to make friends, do capoeria. Muay thai, BJJ, Boxing etc would beat the shit out of any capoerista every day

Good for learning defense against knives. Which is pretty epic if you have the time to learn it but I would not take it over something as, forexample Krav Maga that incorporates both striking and grappling and teaches you dirty tricks.

learn the Indonesian martial art Silat. It requires lots of flexibility and legwork similar to capoiera, without all of the cultural stuff you hate

boxing. last time i checked, 99% of the people you will most likely have to defend yourself against are not trained martial artist and at most have boxing or wrestling backrounds. Learning how to do some quick powerful combos > then learning fancy knife disarming techniques that are impossible to practice efficiently.

tl;dr: learn how to knock people the fuck out because that is most likely all you're going to need. if you want more intensive training then go for it but boxing is the most effective and easily accessbile and practical of them all.

I actually do capoeira. And it is a crazy martial art/dance but I wouldnt say its the most effective. It gets you really tired really fucking fast. But if you were to have a fusion of capoeira and some really deadly martial art like muy thai then shit would really start become crazy.

Pic related: Its me playing capoeira.

First time I practiced Capoeria, it was with a local group who incorporated it with Wushu kung fu and Muay Thai. I was the only white guy in the group, and that shit worked me harder than any other workout in my life. It was awesome.

Capoeria works for defense now a days becuase while you tire quickly, no one has any fucking clue what your doing. How the fuck do you box a guy doing backflips?

In terms of Awkwardness, it only falls to Drunken Fighters. Best thing I've ever seen was a drunken fighter kick someones ass in some low level tourney. He fell to the ground before they other guy even got close. Having no idea what to do, they other guy got close, and suddenly was on the ground while the DF was headbutting their leg of all places. They were so confused and stunned that within a minute of fighting, they could barly stand becuase of damage to that 1 leg.

you wait until he stops and then knock him the fuck out. doing weird flashy things to distract people isn't as good as it sonds. this isn't the movie where the group of bullies drops their guards and lets out a collective "WOAH!" as you flip around. in real life they would tackle you and kick the ever loving shit out of you.

99% of all of thjese mystical martial arts are bullshit for self defense. i'd like to take kung-fu for the discipline and fun of it but i would never take drunken kung fu for self defense...learn boxing, muy thai, wrestling/judo/bjj and you'll be able to tear shit up much more effe tively then if you were trying to distract people with flashy moves

Judo. It doesn't bother with cultural shit. I can't think of anything we do where I take judo that doesn't have some sort of practical application to playing better judo.

You'll be able to kick some ass if you so choose. You will use your legs.

Judo has a fairly low learning curve for beginners. Once you know how to do proper breakfalls, know a few throws and foot sweeps, and know a few ground techniques, you can start randori (sparring).

Judo gets you pretty strong, too. Ground fighting definitely works out your core. From what I've heard, being thrown makes you stronger through isometrics because all of your muscles tighten and loosen when you fall.
