OP, street fighting and legal fights are different animals. Try to use a take-down martial art in a street fight and you will have your targets buddies kicking your face in while you're wrestling with him. NEVER take-down IRL unless you are absolutely sure its only 1 person.

You're never going to fight in the streets unless you're the asshole going around looking for the fights...in which case you may end up being tazed or shanked like an idiot. Life is not an action movie and it takes two to go at it, so you're only going to be fighting in the streets if you WANT to, in which case it's a criminal offense.

Legal fight? There's no such thing as a legal fight. You can't both agree to fight. It's still a crime and you'll both be arrested if caught.

As a sport, do whatever you want. If you train in Karate as a sport, you're only going to ever fight other Karate practitioners in a tournament or spar, unless you decide to enroll in an MMA tournament and get the shit kicked out of you. If you want to know how to fight MMA, go get years of experience in multiple fighting styles and one of them better be wrestling, then start basic MMA training.

>>112553

Defend yourself from WHAT? Are you really one of those paranoid /k/ types who thinks the second he steps out of his house three niggers with bats and bike chains are going to jump him for his wallet? This shit is not a common occurrence, sorry to burst your WWE/action movie bubble.

You're never going to get mugged or attacked unless you make downright stupid decisions like walking the streets of NYC or Detroit after midnight in run down areas. Even then, most people who would mug you would want to do it QUICK AND SILENTLY. They don't WANT to get arrested or kill you, they want your wallet and no witnesses.

And if you are still TRULY worried about defending yourself, hand to hand fighting is about the WORST method of doing so. It isn't a movie. You won't give a guy the one-two punch and have him laid out. It'll drag on and be very loud and tiring for both of you. You want protection? Invest in a tazer.

Learn the ground game in case they try to take you down. Gang fights happen but people tend to break up the fight rather than join in. Can you really count on your friends to help you in a fight? Chances are they won't help though they might try to stop it.

Taekwondo, ancient Asian arts (except for Muay Thai) are generally bullshit and not worth learning regardless of how nongay the dojo or the teachers are. Color belt systems are gay too.

Learn boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, Judo but most importantly, condition your body.

ima tell yall a story here about fighting. My dad was a brother in the deek house at LSU. for those of you who dont know what that means the movie animal house was based of the partied of the deek house during ther era of the fraternity that my dad was a brother. Anyway, he was at a party with his girlfriend at the time and some guys from a rival frat house jumped him and cheap shoted him in the head with a metal chain. The day after he got out of the hospital he got a crow bar and a base ball bat, broke both femurs of one of the guys who jumped him, and knocked the other guy out and tied him up naked to the fountain outside of one of the sororities at LSU. When he went to court to sue the guys who jumped him the judge threw the case out because my dad had already handled it himself. Ive had his friends tell me this story also so i know its true. Anyway the point is if your in a fight just make sure you win because if you dont you might end up tied up naked outside a sorority or in a wheel chair because both your femurs have been broken.

Most crime victims are naive, maybe not stupid knuckle-draggers, but naive, yes.

The best way to fight crime is to avoid it. People don't get mugged and shot in broad daylight in front of crowds unless it was some kind of pre-planned gang hit. If you live in a big city, it's as simple as staying in the uptown areas and not straying off alone into back alleys and deserted basketball courts.

It's a fact that the majority of violent crimes in the US are drug and gang related. Yes, you'll probably get shot if you owe a gang member or drug dealer money and don't pay him back. Yes, you'll probably get mugged if you're a skinny white person in the slums of Harlem.

Violence among humans is not different from violence in nature. Criminals prey on the weak. They strike from the shadows against lone targets. Surely, a hungry cheetah does not attack a bison right in the middle of the herd...they'd get trampled by the alpha male bison. So they use cunning. They use guerilla attacks to break up the herd and they attack the slowest target.

In human society, that slow target is often a naive person from out of town. Maybe they don't kill him. Maybe they just lure him away from safety with a scam and snatch his wallet. It's still a crime that would have been avoided if the victim had more common sense.

Or look at car theft. It's a crime of opportunity. Nobody is going to smash in your window and hot wire your vehicle while it's parked in front of a 7-11. They WILL steal it if you're one of those dumbasses who leaves it running because you thought it'd be safe to leave the key in the ignition while you grabbed a coffee.

Awareness is the ultimate weapon against crime. Not fists or guns.

my friend does MMA and i wrestle (competitively in freestyle, folkstyle, and grecoroman.) When we fought on mats for fun he hit me with a like flying leap knee thing in the chest, and it knocked the wind out of me. But i countered with a headthrow and when the fight got on the ground i kicked his ass with wrestling technique because he knew nothing bout ground combat at all. The point is if you know how to wrestle and the fight gets taken to the ground no one will be able to beat u if they only have striking training.

"You're never going to fight in the streets unless you're the asshole going around looking for the fights"

this is very far from the truth.
I learned to fight by getting fights picked with me for no reason. The best way to get good at street fights is be in lots of them. I have never started a fight. I avoid them at all costs. No matter what training you take you could still end up stabbed or shot.

If you really want to "train" for these kind of fights take krav.

>>112603

Yeah, I'm not saying martial arts are bad as a sport. It gets you in shape and if you enjoy the safe competition in a dojo or boxing ring, then go for it.

It's just something that requires maturity, responsibility, and proper training. Not different from owning and maintaining firearms. There's a vast difference between a sportsman who goes competition shooting and a wannabe tough guy who carries a Glock and drools over the idea of using it on someone in public. One is a responsible adult, the other is a fucking dangerous loose cannon.

And we have enough dangerous loose cannons in the world. Don't be one of them.

My friend who does muy thai's takedown defence basically consists of staying out of most grappling if at all posible, and if he does get taken down he just tries to base up and do a stand up. also the reason that i kicked his ass so bad on the ground is that i was 3rd in state in the 189 pound class jr year and 2nd in state 171 pound class senior year in my state, so im more than decent in folkstyle and freestyle technique. I got him in an armbar and basically tried as hard as i could to rip his shoulder out of socket. Then during our second match for fun basically the same thing happened but i put him in a guillitine instead lol. But hes decent on the ground for muy thai.

>>112646

Then you're just unlucky or hung out with the wrong crowds. It's extremely rare to have fights started for absolutely no reason. We all got picked on in school. EVERYONE got picked on. The alpha male jocks got shit from other jocks, they got shit from skaters and nerds. The nerds got shit from jocks. The skaters got shit from bikers. The beauty queens got shit from goth chicks. Whatever. It doesn't mean you have to fight.

It's like prison. You don't get stabbed for doing nothing. You get stabbed for being a snitch or for crossing the wrong gang members. They could give a fuck less about some guy who reads all day and never talks to anybody.

You can't fight a group mentality. Maybe they fought you for being a smart ass to them? That's usually how youth fights start from my experience. Someone is getting picked on, they make a comment back, then the bully wants to throw down. You know, it might totally suck ass to have to avoid confrontations or endure insults, but it always takes two people to fight at the end of the day.

I've never been in a fight in my life and I don't plan to ever be in a fight. Avoiding a fight is based mostly on knowing which types of people to avoid. Don't make comments behind someone's back. Humans gossip. It will get back to whoever you said it about and they may very well come looking to pummel you.

Yeah, no, he's not doing Muay Thai right. He should know how to Thai clinch and manage things like hip tosses and guillotines.

And takedown defense != just prancing around out of reach. Counters, and timing the grappler's movement for well-timed hooks and uppercuts to the jaw, etc.

I remember reading Chuck Liddell's book, and in it his friend who I forget gets hit by a cheap shot by some guy in the back of his head. So he takes his watch off and starts laying guys out. I don't remember the number, but I think it was like 6 or so.

Check out the way Chuck drops his hands to chamber a punch. Watch him tee off on ortiz against the cage and than watch a kyokushin-kai like Midori blast somebody in comp - very similar. His snap-kicks are underestimated as well. Guys from the pit really just use a hybridized hawaiian kempo style. Glover is very similar in style as well. Chuck does retain some god given talent of course. Chuck Liddell is Karate embodied in MMA - the chambered punches, the dropping of the hands, the snap kicks. Liddell began studying Koei-Kan karate at the age of 12; the tattoo that can be seen on his scalp reads "Koei-Kan" in Kanji. He went on to gain his Black Belt and win a national championship title in that same style. Later in his career he met up with a former professional kickboxer by the name of John "The Train" Hackleman. Chuck went to John's dojo called the "The Pit" in the hills of Arroyo Grande, CA and was introduced to the art of Kajukenbo or Hawaiian Kempo-Karate. His training here led him to become a North American Champion for the IKF, WKA, WKC and the USMTA.

Sure, using strict boxing in a fight might not be the best bet... but as a means to start learning how to throw a proper fist and hold a good guard (footwork) its one of the best striking arts there is.

A combo of western kickboxing/ Eastern (Muay Thai) with BJJ would be a damn solid grounding in the basics.

When you have a really strong grasp of these arts, they'll be second nature, thats when you can start watching Bas Rutten DVDS.

Also, Thai boxing and BJJ will get you into very decent shape provided you train hard at a decent gym.

If you have the ground work covered, and the standing work covered... the rest is down to your god given instincts, luck and the ability of your opponent.
