21 year old Male, 195 pounds.
Considering joining Jujutsu. Would love to go once, maybe twice a week (I'm in college, and need some way to unwind / get some exercise).
What would I expect if I joined now? A bunch of 10 year olds who way outrank me, kicking my ass all day?

Go with Krav Maga. I love it. No kids and no douchebags.

Are you that Krav Maga troll that posts here?

Go join Aikido, it's the best martial art out there at the moment.

No. Actually this is my first time posting in /fit/. I usually stick to /k/, but I was bored and thought I'd check this place out. Do you have a KM troll?
>> Anonymous
>>347207
No but we do have an Aikido troll, see>>347202

Aikido is for hippies who don't believe in hurting their opponents. Go with something practical like the aforementioned Krav Maga or Karate. Anything but Aikido.

Yeah, he on here occasionally ranting about how every other martial art besides KM is for faggots. You know, one of those "style is more important than the individual fighter" people.

Aikido is amazing you use your chi to do amazing things and if you can't realize that then you're just a stupid troll.

Depends on what you like OP. If you like hitting people, pick a striking art (Muay Thai, Boxing, etc.). If you like throwing people, go with Judo. If you want to roll around on the mat with another guy, go with some form of Jujitsu. Whatever you pick, just make sure you know what you want since most places charge about $100/month. As for the 10 year-olds, I'd suggest asking the place if they have an adult only class. Those little shits can get annoying.
>> Anonymous
The martial arts are embarrassing. Whatever you pick, do what /jp/ does and hide your power levels about it.
>> Anonymous
Muay thai or brazilian jiu-jitsu are your only options.

all the karate, kung-fo, shotokan, etc etc is a load of shit.

Listen to this man, to an extent. Real karate and not that mini-mall bullshit with the 10 year black belts. Example: Lyoto Machida

hello /fit/

recently ive been wondering if i should join a boxing gym but im not really sure, its been some years since the last time i exercised regularly, i used to train in my former university weight lifting team and if i had spent a bit more i wouldve competed at least locally, but classes got in the way and i just stopped, now im fat (around 277 pounds) and with no condition whatsoever, also i smoke a lot...

so i ask you, is boxing really going to work for me? i wonder about it since im looking for something i can train at while doing a lot of cardio and actually learning to defend myself... but i think i might be too old and fat and might fail miserably, also i dont see myself not smoking, tho when i was doing weight lifting i smoked only 1 cigg a day (now i smoke like 12 a day)...

its my first time at /fit/ so i dont mind if i sound like a newfag... but i will certainly appreciate your help.

I took a single krav maga class on a whim in 2004. There weren't any little kids but there were plenty of douchebags.

OP here. Thanks for the heavy amount of information.

I'm looking for something that will teach me some form of self defense (especially if I'm eventually able to ward of multiple people, with or without knives). Also, something that's fun. Is that a lot to ask for from the martial arts trainings?

I have an ebook about Aikido: The Art of Nonphysical Fighting (or something like that). Is it worth reading?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a one on one fight style. It's very effective and fun to learn, but let's say two persons attack you at the same time, you wont be able to use your BJJ.

Im personnaly doing muay thai right now, but i plan to try BJJ.

All you fags are dumb.

Military sambo, muay thai and jujitsu. Brazilian jujitsu is famous but I think it's a bit overrated.

I still remember the Japanese champion beat one of the Gracie brothers (broken ankles and wrist) when he went to Brazil. ggnorethx

Brazilian Jujutsu is overrated. It's jujutsu without the historical part. A majority of people also believe what they see or are told on TV.

UFC has become the new Monday Night Football for younger men and BJJ has become so recognizable because of it. The viewers see guys actually fighting so they make the connection that it must be the best because:
A) Look at how long that crazy ass buff dude with 3 of the same tattoos that I have is lasting
B) They're allowed to throw kicks, so that doesn't make it boxing right?
C) They're rolling around and punching each other, this reminds me of that time I was sooo drunk and I fought this other guy that was shitfaced. Damn, I'm gonna learn this because it'll totally make me look cool when I'm fighting guys in bars.

I don't care if you learn BJJ but do it for the right reasons and keep in mind, it's not the "best" but it's mighty handy. Just because you learned it doesn't make you the "Invincible Iron Fist."

Don't waste your time. The only thing Aikidoka are good at is arguing why Aikido is an effective martial art. They are delusional. Fighting inherently involves physicality. And today, there are two forms of effective fighting, sports combat and military combat. On one hand you have arts like wrestling, boxing, muay thai kickboxing, and BJJ, etc, and on the other hand you have arts like Krav Maga, small localized self-defense arts, and other military arts I can't think of ATM. Stick with the jujitsu, it's good for both aspects. You can make it like a combat sport or more into real combat.

Jesus christ. OP wants to have something to do to "unwind and get some exercise".

He didn't say he wanted to be the king of the world and learn how to fucking dismantle firearms.

And to OP: I'm assuming you're talking about BJJ, and yes you definitely will get exercise, and yes I really do believe you will unwind during it aswell (it really helps clear my mind anyway).

I really don't think you'll encounter anyone younger than maybe 16-17, but that's just a guess.

Go check out your local schools, and MAKE SURE THE INSTRUCTOR IS LEGIT. There are a SHITLOAD of bogus jits places, people holding fake degrees and fake belts under fake people.
>> Anonymous
These are the simplest and most effective, practical martial arts. I'm going to teach you them right now in one post. Are you ready for this? Here we go:

Get a concealed carry permit and gun, ammo.
Run the fuck away.
Give the guy your wallet.
Don't go to fucking seedy ass establishments with douchebags where drunk idiots pick fights over trivial bullshit.

OP wants to have some fun and move around a bit. I dont think he´s expecting to learn the skillset to beat fedor.

Join juijutsu class, have fun. Stop caring if you suck at it.
>> Anonymous
Not OP, but after asking /fit/'s advice on a similar matter, I went to try out JuJutsu classes.

Turns out my local gym had two classes, and the trainer told me to come to try out both.

The first was entirely ground combat. It completely fucked me. Good laugh beating the little guys despite my complete lack of technique based solely on being heavier than them, until I went up against a couple of slightly larger guys who fucking kicked my ass.

The second was the standard self defence jujutsu, i.e. if someone grabs you like this, then you punch them in the balls like this. Also a good laugh, but getting thrown when you don't know how to fall and you smack the back of your head repeatedly on the ground sucks ass.

It's a fucking hard work out. I swear to god, I sweated litres into that borrowed jacket.

Problem is, I hadn't done any exercise of that type before, so I ended up with scratches and stretch marks all over my arms, pulled just about every muscle in my body, bruises like a mother fucker, bastard friction burn on my forearm, badly strained wrist tensors and a fucked lower back from landing repeatedly on my ass.

It's been 4 days, and I'm more or less back to normal, but I can't be losing 4 days worth of exercise every time I go to class.

Fuck your "man up, you pussy" bullshit, I think I'm going back to swimming and basketball till my body hardens up some...

A few things:
-Most martial art classes have divided classes for adults and kids
-Adults usually advance faster so you can expect to go through the first few belts a bit faster than the kids (for instance, in Judo getting the orange belt would require a kid to train 3-2 years but an adult could probably get one in months (depends on the instructor tho))
-Jiujitsu is a pretty good martial art, the problem with it is that it's in the middle of the practicality scale.
If you want to learn how to fight, there are much better martial arts and if you're looking for a workout, again, there are much better martial arts for that too.

Muay thai, both practical and a good workout.
