Hi, /fit/.

I'm an obesefag, but life was not always such, as a kid I was raised into karate.

Question: what is /fit/'s opinion of long term martial arts practice for increasing fitness and losing weight? I've got a training partner to keep things going, and friends and family to remind me to keep up.

Picture pretty much unrelated, was the closest to appropriate I could find.

diet's more important
but any exercise will do you very well with a good diet behind it

There is no way you're going to lose much weight practicing karate by itself. Go to a gym and do what works like everyone else.

my friend said a guy who trains with him at jiu jitsu lost a shit ton of weight doing it, like 90lbs in 6-8 months

Muscular I'm not really worried about, I just want to regain the shape I was in as an eight year old and lose all this weight I've gained over the years.

You want to be really short?

Yes. Short so I can jab Michael Jackson in the balls.

Karate is pretty intense cardio dude. At least if you go to a school that spars a lot, or at least does forms a lot.

Martial arts are very good for flexibility, decent for cardio if you do sparring, but of themselves won't give you that much of a muscular boost. You'll get more toned, at least if you work hard, but it's just not the sort of exercise that makes your muscles larger.

If you want to lose weight with it, do sparring. It's hard work, and if youy can keep doing it for a while you'll probably start to lose weight. I don't think it'd be as helpful as going running or swimming for an hour, but it'll do something.

Most useful part of it is getting some discipline. Most places will tie in some exercises as part of it so that you do build some strength. Place I went to had little bits of exercise over the 1 1/2 hour block, so that by the end of it everyone had done 100 pushups, crunches and squats, and doing that twice a week will get you more fit.

If you really want to get fit, do the MA classes, and go to a gym on the off days with a weight loss/fitness gain program. Keep this up for a few months and you'll see a big difference.

Like I said above...I'm mostly interested in losing weight, not so much bulking or any of that. I'm doing karate because I'm already trained in it, and I can do hour+ basics and kata workouts without an instructor on hand for a while, until I feel confident enough to attend one of the local dojos of our style (Shotokan).
