cardio helps your lung and heart capacity, and other related endurance factors. It does also increase your metabolic rate, but compared to your Basal Metabolic Rate (energy your body uses to not be dead), it's a small fraction.
In terms of importance in shaping your body, I would say: 70% diet (not the quick-fix yo-yo diets, but eating healthy - going for a lot of protein, moderate fat and little carbs) 20% resistance training - to keep you from losing muscle mass while in caloric deficit 10% cardio - endurance related shit
