Front squats obviously shift the center of gravity, giving them a different feel than regular squats. You will certainly not be able to do as much weight with them. At least they are something different to try, like if you hit a plateau, or get bored with other leg exercises, or hurt yourself on the shitty smith machine.
I despise smith machines. Smith machine squats are terrible because either you put your feet ahead of the bar, in which case you are working against the motion of the weight; or you put your feet under the bar, which puts tremendous shear forces on your spine and shins.
Does your gym have a hack squat machine or a leg press? You can do leg presses with your feet positioned low on the platform so as to put the force generated more on your quads and less on your glutes.
