Let's talk philosophy, /fit/

Body as a barrier to Will.

Does it enrage you that methodical thought and hard work will eventually leave any amount of "talent" wheezing in the dust?
If so, why?
If not, why not?

What do you think of the rare cases where will overcomes physical limitations? I.E. Mother lifts a car to rescue her infant. Myth?

The example where the mother lifts the car is pretty interesting. Is it will that enables her to overcome her boundaries? Or is it the body that enables the feat by producing adrenaline as an effect from the high stress situation? Perhaps it's mixture of will and body going to temporary new heights so she can accomplish the challenge.

There was something on the Discovery Channel about that. Basically, when you're not in danger, the brain limits how many muscle fibers can fire off at the same time. When you are in danger, adrenaline activates some part of the brain that then travels back down as nerve impulses, telling all the muscle fibers to contract, thereby allowing the mother to lift the car off her infant. Why the body doesn't do this all the time is because it's a last ditch tactic to preserve life. They said all the fibers rip if they all contract at once, so that's why in normal situations only the minimal amount of fibers are used to get the job done.

a human being can accomplish anything with enough will and resources.

Not really. Leave that shit to the fatalists.

this is pretty interesting, something similar happend to me once. I was in the forest helping my uncle cutting down trees, and he accidently gets his foot stuck under the tree by accident and I kinda panicked and managed to lift the tree just enough so he could get loose. It was no small tree either, luckily it hit the steel part of his working boots so no permanent damage.

How can you even say much less fathom the thought of "overcoming the body" without utilizing the body? The body is not a barrier to will. The way you experience the instrumentation of your body is a barrier to you achieving what you want. When thought and action are perceived by others as inspiring it can be seen as "talent".

Give up the bullshit you tell yourself to hold back in your exercise. GIVE IT UP!!!

Mother lifts a....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Also body is not a barrier you dumbfuck, it's a tool, a tool which you can manipulate and improve using the will.
>> HypnoticDan
Your will is a result of conciousness, which comes from the electrochemical workings of your brain. Can will overcome body? It's like asking if a piece of software can overcome the computer. If it could I'd write a program to punch people in the face over the internet and it would work, too.

it doesn't enrage me because methodical thought cannot create inspiring works of art, and "eventually" could be a very very very long time. on the other hand, imho talent is a head-start, but not a guarantee. It doesn't surprise me that a normal person with willpower can overcome a lazy person with talent.

Try to deadlift a 225 lbs barbell. Good?

Try to deadlift 225 lbs attached to a handle made of steel cable which is 3/8 inch gauge.

It doesn't feel the same as the barbell. You'll probably lift the one, but the other will terminate quickly with you dropping the box, because your hand will send messages to your brain that the load will fuck with your tendons. Same weight, but you just can't lift the one with a handle that cuts into your skin.

Much of strength is overcoming the inhibitory instinct that protects us from hurting ourselves. It's why retards, mental patients, and drug addicts sometimes have superstrength.

>Body as a barrier to Will.

Its more like Mind as a barrier to Body. Only when ALL the muscle fibrils in your body are contracting, would that be a bodily limitation to will. And like someone said, all the muscle fibrils contracting is never going to happen unless you're in extreme danger. Your mind subconsciously places limits on what your body can do, to protect itself. Considering that, many mental blocks can be worked through. Visualization and other sports psychology techniques can help someone not worry about the pain from a lift, and to only focus on completing the objective.

being able to do hardwork and push yourself IS a fucking talent

Willpower can be trained just like everything else in your body. Just like you can make your mind smarter by studying, making your body stronger by training, you can increase your willpower by practicing self-control.

Why would it enrage me? Hard work is the only way.
There is no talent, only people who interested in things more than others and who work harder.
