First of all - this is NOT a troll post

How does /fit/ feel about fasting? Advantages/disadvantages?

Second of all - I do exercise, regularly (5-6 times a week), but I also binge on occasion like today, and to make up for the massive calorie intake, I figure calorie negation might work too (i.e. not eating anything the next day)

Thoughts?

You're an idiot.
Both binging and fasting have negative effects on your body composition.

I don't binge on purpose, fuckwad

the man's comment stands; you're an idiot.

I suppose you don't run into someone while driving on purpose, but you are still to blame. Flawed logic.

I didn't say I don't blame myself, you assholes

What's so horrible about fasting for a day? Especially if you over-ate the previous. Surely there will be leftover food not fully processed by your body by the next day rolls around.

Wrong. Your body is storing all the excess calories as fat.

Then, when you fast, it breaks down your muscle to conserve and provide energy.

Stop trying to rationalize your binging/fasting you fucking idiot. If you binge, then just work extra hard during your next workout session to work it off and get back into your normal diet plan.

You're body will go into survival mode, or most important, a catatonic state where your body will process your muscle prior to anything else. Thus leaving you just as fat and with less muscle now. Sounds like fail to me. If you want to make up for a fatty day, go fucking workout.

FASTING:

Look it up on as many sites as possible before you go doing this. Naturally it's the most dangerous of all the "natural" things you can do with yourself. One things that is universal is to pick a time when you won't be harried by life. If you can get a month off work - then take that time to do it. You will want to make sure you drink plenty of fluids, at all times.

Use an 'ease in - ease out' method. First, to ease in, drop your caloric intake over a period of a week. Eat super-healthy things like greens, legumes and light meat like fish. Cut meat before your last day. Drink extra water. If for some reason you need to stop fasting, don't go to McDonalds and scarf down 10 hamburgers. You'll just throw up. Ease back in with a diet similar to the one you stopped eating with - start with greens, and soups. Wait a good week before eating heavy greasy food.

What are the benefits of fasting? They don't happen quickly. Most people who only fast a week rarely find any use for it. You'll need to do at least two weeks to a MONTH to get into the life-changing mental clarity that people who have fasted talk about. I've known people who have done it and it is supposedly quite profound and empowering. And yes, you'll lose weight, but that shouldn't be your reasoning behind it - or you're just going to stop fasting a day into it.

He's talking about fasting for a day, not a hunger strike, Chavez.

Fasting isn't necessarily bad, but to just do it for no reason seems stupid. Muslim bodybuilders I know fast during Ramadan and say that they usually try to maintain during the time. They said that the most they lose is 3-5 lb, which they get back after a week or so when they get back into it.

it considers short-term fasting and low food frequency in a diet for weight lifters as opposed to 6 meals/day dogma. i believe the results speak for themselves, not to say i have had good experience with this approach.
