hey /fit/ first time posting here.

I really want to start losing weight. I'm sick of being overweight. My goal is to try and slim down a lot by the summer, and hopefully gain some muscle mass. I'm pretty heavy right now, probably 250 pounds or more. I have not weighed myself in a while.

There is a gym right down the street from me, no more than a 5 - 10 minute walk. I don't know why I've never joined yet, probably because I don't have anyone to go with. Most of my friends that worked out over the summer now have after school activities so they won't have the time to come with me after school and such.

Basically, I just want to get a workout routine I can do at the gym everyday. I've never really worked out in a gym before so I want to know what I'm doing before I start.

Gonna hopefully try to get into a routine by Monday and such. I'm going to go to the gym on the weekend and register.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks :)

Working out. You have to want it really bad. I just lost about 40 lbs over the summer. I weighed 212 which is unhealthy for my height. I started on the bike for 30 minutes every day except one rest day. After the bike I did 5 sets of 5 bench, curls, flies, lat pulldown and crossover cables. Alternate days I did leg machines and squats. Start with low weight and work your way up. BE DEDICATED.

Start replacing those white bread sandwiches with light english muffins. I toast mine. Very thin slices of hard cheese. Turkey and chicken breast. NO MAYO. Eat salads with MINIMAL dressing. I use that weight watchers shit you can buy at the store and spray on. I also use salad supreme seasoning cause I don't like my veggies that much. Cut back how much you eat. Eat a small portion and tell yourself you ARE DONE. Put it in a container and put it in the fridge.

STOP EATING WHEN YOU ARE BORED. STOP EATING BECAUSE YOUR FRIENDS ARE. EAT WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY, BUT DON'T EAT TOO MUCH.

op here

good advice.

for a while now I've replaced white bread with wheat bread. usually my lunch consists of sliced turkey on wheat bread. bottle of water, and I'll probably bring in a piece of fruit more often with it.

chicken is a main part of my diet, mostly because I'm a picky eater. should I just eat plain chicken breast baked in the oven? I know fried chicken is really bad for you, I'll stop going for that too.

thanks

How about your height/weight/goals, and we can give a little bit more advice.

I'm 5'7. Almost 5'8. just weighed myself now, almost 300 flat. how embarrassing. I don't look or feel that heavy at all. oh well.

I really want to cut my weight by a lot. 50 pounds seems like a good start. Thinking about it, bodybuilding isn't really what I'm looking for even though I put it in the original post with muscle mass. I just want to slim down.

So you're about the same situation I am, with the exception of the weight, heh.

Basically, starting out will be your toughest challenge, and working out isn't the only thing you have to do to lose weight.
You should probably sign up at the gym and try and take a fitness test, so they can help you out on what your calorie intake should be, etc.
Basically what I'm doing now, is eating 4 (as nutritious as I can) medium meals a day, about 300-400 calories each, every 4 hours.
That combined with jogging every day I have time for at least 20 mins, and doing extra shit on mon, wed, friday.
Like I'll run 20-40 minutes every day, an hour on mon, wed, friday, then do resistance shit on mon, wed, friday as well.

Try doing a couple crunches, pushups in between the running etc, helps A LOT.
Also, I plan on swimming on tuesdays and thursdays instead of jogging when I can build up a little more endurance.

Just eat normal, healthy food, and you should be fine as long as you're working out correctly.
Of course all the /fit/fags will go nuts over eating habits.

should I even start out with jogging? I was thinking of using other cardio machines at the gym for 30 - 40 mins every day after school. then after seeing results I could probably jog a lot more effectively? not sure.

30 to 40 minutes eh?

Have you heard of HIIT?

Unless your general fitness is terrible, do HIIT instead of long steady cardio. Even if you cant manage a full on HIIT work out, try to at least incorporate some of the ideas.

Hey HIITers, how do you keep track of time for sessions. I use my ipod touch in a harness when I run and I don't have a lot of money to spend on stop watches... Ideas?

This is what I hate about /fit/.

Your average person (especially someone who is just starting out) can't do shit like HIIT, even if they wanted to.

Start out at about mmm 2.5 mph, with a 2 whatever incline, I don't know what the measurement is, but at least try to get an incline.
Kinda like a brisk power walk.

Make sure you warm up though first, like just a normal walk for about 10 mins on an incline, then go for it.
