So /fit/, tell me what you know about martial arts. Specifically, I want to learn Northern Shaolin, but of course I can't find anywhere remotely near me that can teach it to me. I also don't want to learn some watered down strip mall version of it, because I know there are those too. Can /fit/ point me in the right direction?

You'll literally learn how to dance in tournaments (they call it "form" I call it "dancing")

I understand. It's still something I'm interested in learning. Anything would be appreciated. I was hoping there would be a nice study guide or something, but any help is welcomed.

Wushu /fit/fag here.
What do you want to know? We obviously can't recommend any locations because we don't know...your location. You can try buying/ordering books or authentic-looking videos. For starters I'd recommend "The Shaolin Workout" by Sifu Shi Yan Ming, a Shaolin monk who basically fled his group of monks while they were touring the US to teach kung fu in New York. No book or video can compare to having actual instruction, though.

I know a book can't compare to actual instruction, bit it's a good start to be able to at least practice something. Still books and guides of some srot were what I was looking for to start with, so thanks for the recommendation.

He fled from his group of monks? that seems kinda gutsy. Any specific reason why? Now i'm curious.

Good luck with that. Try getting a set of arrow tattoos and flying around the world for a few years trying to find your firebending master, master avatard, or start looking for bajiquan, practical tai chi chuan, ba gua chang, xingyiquan, tanglang quan and anything else ending in quan chang or chuan. Or just ask the local judo/karate teacher about chinese arts nearby.

Try to find a good teacher instead of a spesific martial art. Some of the better ones may travel around holding few-day courses, and you could try going to one. Just read about the teachers before you go. See Wong Kiew Kit. His site has good-looking articles about fighting with traditional arts, but also promise to cure various illnesses including cancer and he wants 1500$ for a one-week course.

Wow, little touchy are we? I'm aware that Avatar based their shit Northern Shaolin, Ba Gua, and so on, but that's not my reason for wanting to learn.

An old friend of mine whom I haven't heard form in years used to practice Northern Shaolin. I don't know where he learned it but he was damn good. I've been told he's moving back here in about a year. Now, I already practice Jeet Kun Do, but I want to learn at least a bit of Northern before he gets here.

Maybe I should have looked into it sooner.

Mainly it was to spread the teachings of Shaolin Kung Fu. In China not long before Mao had been running a campaign to wipe out old culture and customs, which included Shaolin Temples. Shi Yan Ming saw an opportunity in America, specifically New York (the hub of the world or whatever) to keep the Shaolin tradition and teachings alive and bring them to the rest of the world. He was on the first Shaolin Temple Monks tour of the US in 1992, when he slipped out of his hotel room in the middle of the night and, speaking no English was dropped off by a cab at a Chinese Restaurant in the middle of nowhere. From there he contacted a friend he had in NYC, who picked him up and he hid in a basement for a week eating only bread and cereal. After that he established the USA Shaolin Temple, where I'd give my left nut to be able to train at some day.

Doesn't have much to do with marital arts specifically, but it's a fun story.

That is an awesome story. I must find this USA Shaolin Temple and go there.

Even at the cost of my left nut.
