I've been lifting with my buddy for about 3 months now, and hes pretty much has been showing me the ropes.

But I'm not sure if hes right about trimming the waist. He told me that doing cardio doesn't really help your waist. And that extreme ab exercises work better. How do I lose the body fat before summer?

When fat leaves your body, it leaves all at once. Ab workouts are great for the ab muscle(s), but you still will need cardio to lose the fat so you can see the muscles at all.

Extreme ab exercises will do nothing special to help you lose the fat around your abs. He is 100% wrong if he says this is the case. The only way to lose fat is to burn yourself some mega calories. Now, if your abs just don't show very well and it's not due to fat, then yes, some ab exercises can help bring out the definition.

Diet matters. Quit the fast food shit (assuming you eat fast food often) and go into more lean foods, high in protein, etc.

You should certainly continue working your abs, but the actual working of your abs will only help in making them more visible if the fat in that area is gone. Otherwise, you'll just have a 6 pack piled under a mound of fat, and that's fucking worthless.

(Sorry, so basically the point I was trying to make was there isn't any diet that will take fat away from a specific part of you body. But you could still diet for fat-loss to see your abs one day)

Yeah I eat fast food(TGI fridays etc etc) with friends, so I just have to burn mega calories?

And Yeah I'm 100% sure its fat as I can pretty much squeeze the fat when sitting.

Cardio is cardio, nothing works better or worse. In my own opinion it's better to do anaerobic cardio instead of aerobic. Reason being anaerobic is pretty much boosting your metabolism and losing fat even after the work out vs. aerobic where you only lose the calories that you lose during the work out.

Anaerobic - 5 minute warm up
|1 Minute Sprints|
|2 Minute Run| treat those 2 as rounds and repeat 3 to 5 times depending on your abilities
then a 5 minute cool down

So pretty much Go from Medium to Very Hard to Hard to Very Hard to Hard to Very Hard to Hard again and lastly Medium speed at the end.
