Low Carb Low fat? Anonymous
hey /fit/

I'm not any sort of expert in dieting but I hear good things about low carb diets. The thing is, usually I hear "Low carb high fat" followed by their usual justifications.

What would a low carb low fat diet be like? I haven't been eating a low of carbs lately (unwittingly, before I knew about this diet) and my normal fat intake is pretty low. So I'm wondering if I should be actively eating fat foods more in order to shed weight faster.

There's a brief rundown on why the body needs fats (follow the link to essential fatty acids for bonus points).

tl;dr, fats and proteins are 100% essential to a healthy diet. Carbs are necessary, too, but considering that they're the body's first stop for energy, reducing them naturally leads your body to dip into its secondary stores: body fat.

i've been low carbs for a while. it's not difficult, more just making careful selections at meal times.

i gave up:
* all refined flour, so most breads, roll, pizza, pastry, pasta, etc.
*all refined sugar, soft drinks, ice cream, cookies, cake, etc.
* other high carbs and starches like potatoes and alcohol.

substitute in moderate amount of healthy carbs like whole oats and grains in cereals and breads.

i didn't have real cravings like i'd sit and think about eating a bowl of spaghetti for hours, but if i did slip and maybe have some pizza or a dish of ice cream, i really wanted more afterwards.

i put on weight with carbs very quickly, so once i was careful, i didn't gain much. mix in some moderate activity and you can lose weight pretty reasonably.

TLDR; do not eat anything that tastes really good.

If you eat very few cabs, (like a couple pieces of fruit and a couple of vegetables) per day, and then eat lots of fat, your body will use the fat for energy at a rather slow and steady pace. Without any carbohydrate spikes in your body, you have fewer moments of excess energy and fewer moments where fat storage will occur. Some people love this sory of eating, but a lot of people complain that they just feel desperately hungry and depressingly sluggish on a diet like this.

Cutting fat can reduce weight gain too. Because fat is so high in energy and, in some forms, hard to digest, it will often just be turned into tons of body fat after a big meal, to save your digestive system the trouble of actually using the fat for energy if it doesn't have to. This way you can eat carbs and not worry about lots of fat from the meal becoming bodyfat.

Then there's "no-carb" diets, which are designed to hack your digestive system so that it lacks the molecules it needs to even store bodyfat. These diets are rather distressing and not necessarily healthy.
