sup fit

for a chest workout, which is the better of the two - presses or flyes? advantages of each? is it really as simple as one using triceps the other biceps?

i've always really liked flyes because i feel it more.

in my limited experience flyes increase size more in the upper chest, any truth to that?

sorry about all the fucking questions.

oh, and i'm not another fag that just wants pecs, dw, i'm asking this because my pecs are underdeveloped compared to the rest of me.

bench + dips, no silly little isolating flies necessary

dips fuck with a shoulder injury i got when i was younger. :(
>> Anonymous

silly isolating? fuck youre stupid. flyes, much like db pullovers, are one of the best chest exercises. They provide much better pump and stretch than any press. Learning to use them together yields the best results. Fucking moron.

What kind of varitions of OP can I do if I dont have a bench?

you don't have the right to call ANYONE a moron.

thanks for the answer <3

According to many it's bad to use a bench for them anyway because it encourages going past the shoulder, so doing them on a floor should be fine. I do inclines too by propping some left over wooden flooring up against my amp and lying on it.

Going past the shoulder is fine for some people. Everyone's range of motion is different and it is important to know what yours is so that you do not go past it. A simple test is to lie flat on the bench in the position you would do a press. Without any form of resistance, bring your arms down as if you were doing a press. You should not be pulling with your shoulders or back to bring your arms down. This is your preferred range of motion, try not to go past it when you use weight.

nigger do you even know what you're talking about? pump means nothing. NOTHING. pump is just blood flowing into your muscles, it has no effect on strength or hypertrophy or ANYTHING post workout. we've known this for years. don't be such a tard.

OP, the reason your pecs are underdeveloped in the first place is PROBABLY because you were doing stupid isolating exercises like flies, only everywhere else. stick to benching, use barbells because that lets you move more iron.

>>296017

Rippetoe says dumbbell press is just as effective. As a bonus, you can go to failure unspotted. Just drop em.
>> Anonymous
>>296024

DB bench is fine, it works a ton of stabilizing muscles. i prefer BB bench because i can lift heavier weights. with the bench, it doesn't really matter either way.
>> Anonymous
>>296017

just blood flowing to your muscles? what more do you want? Do you realize how fucking important that is? Stop and think for a second. What is the whole goal of lifting? hypertrophy. this is obtained by tearing the muscle fibers and then regenerating them. now imagine filling the muscle with blood and engorging it to its full capacity. Now apply fascia stretching. Ta-fucking-da: you get some serious fucking tears. learn what the fuck you are talking about.

Serious fucking tear = injury. don't do it. its not training and stimulating anymore. its a goddamn injury. and if you keep doing it. you'll get problems
>> Anonymous
>>296210
how many injuries have you heard of from doing flyes? thats what I thought. shutup
>> Anonymous
I prefer DB flies over BB bench personally. I don't care that I lift less with it, DB exercises recruit a hell of a shit load more stabilizers.

wtf i cant do these at all with 20 pound weights Blargh!

Oh holy shit you did not just justify flys because they give you more "pump".

God, the idiocy on /fit/ these days.

strange

I always thought flyes excel in spreading the tits evenly and forming a better shape

whereas presses increase the overall thickness of your titties
>> JL523 !Je.61Huaqc
>>296228

Flys open up your chest, making it wider is what I've been told. Either way, its a good finishing exercise to chest.
>> JL523 !Je.61Huaqc
>>296231

Yes.. It's the different motion. With presses you push straight out, and with flys its a an opening exercise stretching out the pecs.

tomfoolery on /fit/ abounds....

in any case ive always found flys to be good for stretching my muscles as i work them. (so they dont feel as tight when i finish a set)

i like bench press for the feeling of strength that i get from it, and because i see the greatest gains in lifting strength from doing the presses.

>>296239

The motion is exactly the same. Your upper arms move through a 90 degree angle with the same endpoints in either exercise, the only difference is the positioning of your forearms and the weight.

The difference is in the force you're working against at different stages of the rep: with a fly, the force is very high at the start of the rep and then drops off rapidly, whereas a press will have a pretty even force up until the point at which the triceps take over.

I'm guessing this produces differences in shape.
>> JL523 !Je.61Huaqc
>>296315

Sorry, I don't know the specific things about working out.. I just know the results they produce :D. I just shutup and do them. All I know is flys are good for a wider chest.

how are dumbbell flyes more isolating than a fucking benchpress?

in OP's pic I see pecs obviously being worked, and also triceps being used

fucking definition of compound exercise

also stabilizer muscles being worked
>> Anonymous
>>296557
Triceps are on the back of the arms, dumbass, they're the last muscle that would be doing shit during flies

Compound=more than one joint is involved, the only goddamn joint that should be moving during flys is your shoulder
>> Anonymous
>>296560
like i said, look at OP pic

shoulders have changed angle
elbows have changed angle (straightened)

ergo pecs articulated the shoulder angle
triceps articulated the elbow angle

ergo two joints articulated

ergo compound lift BASED ON OP PIC
>> Anonymous
>>296575

You can say this about any isolated exercise. Curls will inevitably change the angle of the shoulders. The only reason you keep your elbows slightly bent at the resting position is so the weights don't pull your arms back too far. It's just for stability.
>> Anonymous
>>296579

And no, using stabilizers do not make an isolated exercise more than that.

Naw naw naw man, the elbow angle barely changes at all in a fly, but in a press it is moved through a nice wide range of motion.

Don't try to make yourself believe that flys are no more isolating than presses, please man, you know that it is absolutely not true.
