as a rower since high school, i'd like to say that>>351023has it exactly right. I just got off my rowing machine in fact...it kicks your ass, but is well worth the effort. You REALLY need to get someone to coach you for the first couple times, even if you feel like you know what you are doing.
As for times and distances, it depends heavily on your height and gender. Taller people generally have an easier time with rowing because of the length they can generate on the stroke. There are tables and other resources online if you get serious about training.
