if you're young smoking isnt really bad for you.
scientific study actually suggests this.
studies prove that smoking is not an added risk factor for lung cancer until after the age of 55 and studies also show that 15 years after quitting smoking you have no more risk of lung cancer than the average person.
so you should be able to smoke until the age of 40 without any detriment.

I don't know what to believe really, but if this is true then it's pretty good news. I eat decently through the day, but night time is the worst. Instead of grabbing a snack, I go for a nice long walk and have a smoke. I don't wanna smoke in my room, my house, or just outside of my house, so it'll keep me active and keep me from eating like a retard. Also started drinking V8.

Except that most people who die an early death from smoking die from smoking-induced heart disease, not lung cancer. Even if heart disease risk is the same after 15 years (it's not), smoking still ages your skin, gives you wrinkles, and saps away your energy. Not to mention it wrecks your circulation. I used to smoke a pack a day. I quit and started running. I swear to god that my dick is twice as big and can stay hard at least five times as long.

>> Anonymous

Your rationale is foolish. Your logic is illogical. Overblown statistics? I didn't think there could be such a thing. Underblown yes, especially when the tobacco companies pay for the research.

I also find it sad and annoying that you lump dissent with your disgusting habit into two camps which have absolutely nothing to do with your choice to poison yourself. Does it make you feel better to think that those who oppose your decision and would gladly see you off of it are simply zealots harping about the virtues of clean living? Or maybe it's just clever subterfuge of the statistics you know to be true.

What's mindblowingly retarded is that you could sit there and claim that anyone who disagrees with the practices of a series of companies which target children, actively lie, smear and campaign against your health are nuts.

I've never been a health nut, I could give a fuck what companies do (VOTE RON PAUL!) and I say that your beliefs need re-evaluation.

Anti-smoking nazis can chock on my dick. Did you know that black people are more likely to cause you harm then other people? I have statistics that will back up my claims. Maybe we should ban them from restaurants if they're that dangerous and offensive to people. There's always going to be people that want control over others, and anti-smoking legislation is these fascists' latest way to shove their moral agendas down our throats. Who cares if you smell smoke, you breathe air pollution every goddamn day, if you don't like it leave my presence. I thank FSM everyday that I live in a smoker-friendly state. Otherwise I'd be kicking the shit out of brainwashed yuppie assholes every other day.

tl;dr - What is the anti-smoking lobby's agenda? Money and greed
>> Anonymous
>>64788

Blacks don't CHOOSE to be black, so it's not okay to discriminate against them. Smokers have CHOSEN to smoke. And frankly, it's a damn stupid choice to make. Nobody should have to accommodate you and your fucking stinky addiction.

Also, though we breathe in pollutin everyday, cigarette smoke is particularly obnoxious. I know people who can walk down a busy street with plenty of cars pumping out fumes and not having any problems, but they get a migraine if they are near a person smoking. Also, people with respiratory problems often have serious issues with smoke, and if they have to walk by you (as people often have to do at my school, since the fucking smokers crowd around the doors to all the buildings), it can mess them up. Nobody's health or comfort should have to be compromised because of your moronic habit.

>> Anonymous
>>64808

So you're a racist AND fascist, big surprise. Blacks have a choice in the way they act. I find when blacks are loud and obnoxious, their whooping and hollering hurts my ears. They stand in the front of entrances to buildings and I literally have a migraine every time someone screams in my ear. If I say anything, it might be dangerous for my health too. And guess what? I suck it up, because I have dignity and class. Maybe you should learn to accommodate others because we are people too.

You're implying that these people who get migraines are walking through a gauntlet of smoke, when in fact the truth is that the contact with the secondhand smoke is minimal. The effects are negligible overall on lifelong health. If some of these people that you're making up really have it that bad, whats a few seconds of holding their breaths? Its not unreasonable. If a person asks me kindly not smoking around them indoors, then I have no problem in honoring that request. But if its outside in public, well then, they can walk around.

Let's consider the mental health aspects of second-hand smoke. Noxious fumes cause stress. Stress is always bad. How can you blame us for not wanting to deal with extra stress which isn't our choice? It is your choice to smoke, right, (dumbass) but when it affects other people you burden others while expressing your freedoms.

2. You will.

I'm not exerting my non-smoking fumes on you, unless I forgot to wear my deodorant, and that's a good analogy (mentally anyways, not sure if B.O. causes cancer or not.) Do you LIKE walking by someone with B.O? Wouldn't it be GREAT if deodorant were required of everyone to reduce the occurrence of negatives? I say yes. The argument you seem to make is "But I love stinking and there is nothing you can do to stop me so nyah!" Very childish.
>> Anonymous
>>65507

>1. Why the fuck not?

Why shouldn't I have to deal with it? Because I don't fucking want to, dumbass. I didn't choose to smoke, so I shouldn't have to deal with the consequences. It's my goddamn air too, I shouldn't have to cough and choke while I'm trying to breathe it. People that smoke in public are the ones that are inconsiderate, not me.

>2. You will.

Not for long. Thankfully, society is becoming progressively less and less accommodating to smokers and their filthy habit, so some day soon the rest of us won't have to deal with their wafting stench anymore. Nonsmokers rights to clean and tolerable air is finally being respected.

Cars (or some type of vehicle, maybe a bus) are necessary for people to get to work and to go buy food.

Dumpsters and other trash receptacles are necessary to dispose of waste. Wet dogs and poor indians don't actually smell that bad. Also, dumpsters, wet dogs, and smelly indians have no capacity to cause migraines or aggravate respiratory problems generally, and aren't nearly as irritating as cigarette smoke.

Also, the fact that smoking is completely unnecessary and retarded makes it even more ridiculous to allow it in public. We need cars and dumpsters for society to function, cigarettes aren't needed.
>> Anonymous
>>65520
>Car exhaust should be outlawed?
Don't make me LOL, exhaust is being regulated in California and, yes, it should be regulated if not for the stench then for the accumulation of pollution and foul air in large cities.

>Dumpsters should have catch-alls for the fumes so I don't get offended when I walk by certain alleys?
Dumpsters aren't actively choosing to stink. They are usually out of the way, cleaned periodically and have lids. Smokers don't even have the consideration to stand by the dumpster where they belong.

>Hell, what if I don't like how strongly poor Indians smell of curry?
The smell of curry alone isn't an issue. I've yet to see anyone get cancer from being around curry-tainted Indians.

>When it's raining, keeping dogs indoors should be compulsory?
For the health of the animal and the people inside the home who live with that animal they should WANT to keep it out of the rain. But I don't live with them. It's still the same as the curry situation.

Unfortunate circumstances do not necessitate legislation save for when there is great and appreciable harm being done.
>> Anonymous
>>65525

I've gotten headaches from dumpsters. Technically, I think it was a trash compactor, but the stench burned my eyes. 90-100+ degree weather + bi-weekly pickup, thank God I moved out of that complex.

And go smell more poor Indians, they really are that bad, and can be worse than walking by someone smoking if you're allergic to one of the spices they overuse in cooking.

In urban areas, it's not necessary for people to drive to the corner store to get food or get to work, so that's a personal choice -- you're choosing to live in an area that requires you to drive. If I don't choose that, why should I have to put up with the awful smelling gas that comes out the back of your car?
>> Anonymous
>>65524
>Not trying to be dickish, but that's a huge over-exaggeration.
I never said "Oh woe is me, I passed a smoker today! My life.... is forfeit to the ravages... of cancer!" That would be an exaggeration.

ANY amount of preventable suffering deserves a solution. Whether it requires action depends upon the severity. In the meantime people (smokers) should have the consideration (until you can only smoke in your home, alone, windows closed) to not smoke in public around people who do not want to be harmed mentally or physically.
>> Anonymous
>>65530
>And go smell more poor Indians, they really are that bad, and can be worse than walking by someone smoking if you're allergic to one of the spices they overuse in cooking.
Poor people stink? They may cause an allergic reaction? LOL! Can't you see how pedantic this is compared to CANCER causing fumes? Chances are the average person will not encounter Indians enough to make legislating their intake of curry a priority. Smokers are encountered every DAY by Joe Q.
>> Anonymous
>>65530
I'd also like to add that counter-examples where the person involved is not knowingly imbibing toxic chemicals for pleasure alone are severely lacking. I don't drive simply because I love the thrill of it, and the average person doesn't either. We drive because most of us have to due to city design. Would it be great if we didn't drive gas-guzzling smog spewers? Sure. Are there controls in place to regulate vehicle emissions? You bet your ass there are in at least some forward thinking places.

People like smoking, it makes them feel good at the moment, but they know its bad for them in the long term. Eventually they'll not like to smoke anymore, and they'll manage to quit. But after smoking for so long, nicotine causes the body to be physiologically dependant upon it. Thats right. Nicotine IS an physical addiction. If you don't like to hear that its an addiction, go research on google.

If anyone has missed the points, it is you.

You ignore the finer points of the arguments such as your freedom to smoke (lol) impinging my upon my freedom to health, that smokers do not need to smoke in order to live and most of all the point that this is about public smoking, not private (for me anyways.) We aren't coming to take your fucking guns so you won't be able to resist our anarcho-fascist state (lolz). We're taking away your ABILITY TO UNNECESSARILY HARM OTHERS. Get that through your head.

And as always, your last resort to things being "grey" and my supposed unawareness of that fact is irrelevant.

Another sign you are losing is your choice of insults. Whiny little bitch? God forbid I want to live a happy, long and healthy life without smokers toxifying the air needlessly in public domains.

You have no argument at all.

This is about public smoking, if you have read any of the other above posts asshole. You fuckers are making laws telling me what I can and can't do in PUBLIC. I don't care if I'm indirectly harming you, my freedom to pursue happiness is more important than scratching a few seconds off of your life. Thats right, I don't care about your health. Your entire argument is based on the assumption that I am assaulting you with my smoke. No fucking way. The effects of public secondhand smoke are not understood on passerby, and in all likelihood its effects would be minimally detrimental to your health. Secondhand smoke has been proven to only be dangerous in an enclosed settings where its allowed to linger. If your 'right to be healthy' was actually a right, then universal healthcare would have been in the Constitution since day one. Guess what? Its not.

tldr; my right to temporary happiness overrides your temporary discomfort
>> Anonymous
>>65629

NOOB ALERT. Patches and gum exist solely to ease the ex-smoker off of nicotine. You can quit cold-turkey, which many people cannot do, because of their body's dependence on it. Or you can ease yourself off of it slowly, without feeling nauseous and vomitty all day long. Thats the beauty of nicotine, the physiological dependence on it can be broken quite easily, unlike something like heroin.

Funny, that's the first time you fucking said that. Haw haw!

Preventable homicide is so sad, especially when the smokers, who don't care about themselves obviously, rely on such shaky arguments as "Well we don't know how much damage it really does." or "I admit it may do some damage, but you aren't important enough for me to concede that I am in the wrong."

Selfish, disgusting pigs!

Not proven? OK, if it's not proven then here is a test of the practicality of disregarding whatever minimal harm you THINK there may be (since after all it's not proven, I take that as saying not proven either way.... perhaps tar and toxins are a myth?)

Smoke around people you love. Your kids, wife, mother, siblings, whatever. What's that? You don't smoke in proximity to them? Then what the fuck is your deal with having the same courtesy for strangers?

And if you DO smoke around your kids and wife and mom and sister, then just stop talking right now. You have bigger issues than smoking.

And no, it's not the slippery slop you seem to claim since the argument against alcohol is ever so slightly different. Drunk people very rarely kill someone directly as a result of drinking. Drunk drivers, on the other hand, do. What separates drunk driving from secondhand smoke? Nothing at all. Both carry risks. Yes, drunk driving is more tragic because it takes someone suddenly and yes, it should have a higher priority due to the immediacy of the negatives. This does not mean, however, that we should just ignore everything else.

It's not a, hmm, 1 or nothing solution.

I don't really smoke in public. I smoke when I'm driving at night and I smoke on the balcony of my apartment (top floor, no need to worry about the people above me). The only time I smoke in public is at work. I work at a mall. Outside the mall, there are benches -- some with those upright "cigarette receptacles" beside them, some without. I smoke at the ones with the cigarette receptacles beside them, which are generally placed in an out of the way part of the sidewalk -- say there are two doors, maybe 250 feet between them, with 3 benches. The one in the middle is where I would be smoking.

Go out there on my 30 minute break, maybe buy a paper at the newsstand, have a cigarette and read the paper in a public place where people generally would have to go out of their way to be near.

What's so bad about this?

Not close enough to a door for it to matter. Only time I can think of anyone having to walk by this particular bench is when it's raining and they accidentally leave out the wrong door. They'd want to stay under the awnings and cross in front of me. In this case, if I noticed someone walking by, I would put the hand holding the cigarette on the back of the bench (think the corny yawn-and-stretch position I hope none of you have ever tried on a date) to maximize the distance between the non-smoker and the cigarette.

Lawlz. Going for a grade school approach now?

"Well you're stupid and miss the points which I never point out!"

I've made exemplary arguments based on the philosophy that says harm which is avoidable should be reduced as much as possible. To argue against public smoking you have to argue that reducing harm to the point of eradication is a negative. You invoke personal freedoms as a trump card despite the fact that your decision to breathe toxic air does have effects on other people. You, or those who supported you, then attempted to make analogies to drinking, curry-smelling Indians and wet dogs of all things. I showed these analogies to be inadequate and most are just plain pedantic.

I see a person, perhaps not even a smoker, involved only for the sake of winning an internet argument. Your tenacity is commendable though you have been soundly beaten on every front. When is it time for you to give up? You do realize that since you are reduced to saying what you've been saying for the last few posts this makes your side the losing one right?

Really? I did not know that repeating what is truth means that one loses a debate. I've repeated myself because you've never had any effective counter arguments to the fact that public smoking will not cause harm to others if the exposure is brief. Brief exposure to second hand smoke is nothing more than a mere nuisance. Your logic dictates that anything that we know about that causes preventable harm should be eliminated. Many things we know cause preventable harm. Must they be legislated out of existence because the majority of people don't like it and know that its bad? Its a lifestyle choice, albeit a poor one.

You're logic is idealistic to the point of simpleness. People will always be self-destructive, its human nature. But what you see as smokers causing harm to others in open air public is laughable. You've consistently shown that you do not have anything to say about this at all, shown by your pussyfooting around this particular issue. You've been called fascist because you've communicated your contempt for smokers as disgusting beings that should be removed from your presence.

>>66404The way I see it, smoking in public is a lot like playing music in your apartment at an insanely loud level.

lets see:
1) smoking in a public place is not the same as playing loud music that annoys people in their private residences

2) because you don't like something happening in a public place, you have the ability to leave/escape it. I don't like when hippies play hacky-sack on the sidewalk but they are free to do what they want because they are in a public area. Disturbing the peace is entirely different, seeing as you have the right to privacy in your residence and loud music is interrupting that right.

3) your opinion of something (dislike of smoking) holds no more weight than someone elses opinion.

Paying more for convenient survival is quite different from a detrimental habit that becomes less enjoyable, and more expensive (you move up in number of cigarettes to get the same satisfaction) the longer you do it.

Also, check out the article and what smokers have to pay for in comparison to non. It's not just the cost of cigarettes.

I cook my lunches at home, I don't buy them, but that's mainly because it's healthier to do so and has nothing to do with money. I eat out maybe once or twice a week. But that's not really a valid argument, because I'm sure many smokers also eat out. And probably more than that, because hell if they smoke they most likely aren't thinking about health so fuck cooking at home for that reason.

I doubt a kid would muster up the courage to ask a smoker to leave, and why should they? The smoker is the one who is being inconsiderate smoking where others have to breathe in the first place. If I suddenly whipped out my cock and started beating it in a public place I would be arrested, but what really is the difference, both acts are a form of exposure and both provide pleasure. Fatty foods are advertised and marketed far more than cigarettes (which have strict regulations on advertisments)
Foods bad for your health aren't always clearly labelled as bad for you, however a smoker cannot claim ignorance to a cigs health effects as they are printed on the back in bold CAPS.
Heavily obese people often doo pay higher life insurance premiums (quite rightly) anyway.
Fatty foods are usually a childhood thing, with irresponsible/ignorant parents feeding their children shit, smokers bring it upon themselves 90% of the time and have been warned as children on the effects of smoking. Obesity is a lack of action(no exercise) wheras smokers consciously put the poison into their body.

I agree that we should put harsher regulations on obesity, I was not however saying we should ban anything, only make it easier for people to quit smoking and slowly phasing out the sale of cigs in the country, only allowing people to buy cigs from the government where the price and strength can be monitored, some cigs have shit like arsenic in them, hopefully government control would limit shit like this.

so it went from banning cigs to making cigs government controlled and regulated? well they already tax the shit out of cigs, and since the government really doesn't care what we put into our bodies either i dont see it happening.

that is a slippery slope you are walking on with that heroin stuff. i am all for people doing heroin if they wish, as long as it doesn't affect anyone else in the process, suicide should also be legal as long as people don't impact others in the process as well.

Who is to say that your way is the right way and should be the only way? You have no control over anyone else, nor should you. Go watch "Demolition Man" then get back to me later.

You don't HAVE to read it. Non-smokers have no choice when it comes to the smoke they must inhale while near smokers. Do you see the difference? of course you don't. You probably voted for Bush. Twice.

I agree with this absolutely! Do whatever you want, as long as it doesn't affect anyone else.

But this also applies to cigarettes. Someone smoking in a public place around other people means that those people are affected. So, smoke in your house or another private place, but not in a public place where people would be affected by it.

I got this pet skunk, I take him around town, to stores and restaurants. Some people are like "Hey, that stinks, you shouldn't bring that around!", but I don't give a shit. Sure I could leave him at home, but fuck those guys, if they don't like it, they can leave. Also, the skunk poisons me a little every day.
>> Anonymous
>>66917
That's cool man, but you should know that skunks probably violate some kind of law about keeping non-domesticated animals in the city. My neighbors had to get rid of their pig because of that. ;_;
>> Anonymous
>>66917
you really have a pet skunk?
that is awesome, i saw a documentary about this dude with a pet otter, but shunks are SO KAWAII.
I've heard there are domesticated ones.
Is your domestic or a wild one?
>> Main article: Pet skunk Anonymous
Domesticated skunks can legally be kept as pets in the UK but they are legal only in certain U.S. states. Mephitis mephitis, the striped skunk species, is the most social skunk and the one most commonly domesticated. When the skunk is kept as a pet, the scent gland is removed. Typical life spans for domesticated skunks are considerably longer than for wild skunks, often reaching 10 years, though it is not unusual for a well cared skunk to live well past 20 years. One problem with U.S. skunks kept as pets is genetic problems due to a lack of genetic diversity. The few breeders of skunks are using the same genetic stock (as none are allowed to be taken from the wild) that was available many decades ago, when skunks were bred for the fur trade instead of the pet trade. Many problems such as undescended testicles, epileptic seizures, etc. are often found with the domestic stock. Some skunks were reported by European settlers in America as being kept as pets by certain Native Americans. The Pilgrims are said to have kept skunks as pets.

well you smoker cunts can enjoy your cancer and wasted money on ridiculously taxed (and will only go up) cigarettes. mmm taste that? its a shorter life and wasted money.

who fails here? the one with a habit that they'll likely never break and will ultimately shorten their life, barring an accident. but if you're going to say "lulz i could get hit by a car tomorrow!" then you should get the fuck off the /fit/ board because theres no point in trying to improve yourself if you can die at any moment. But i doubt any of you smokefags have read this far because your addiction probably got to you and you had to go outside to smoke.

If you can't accept the fact that you're potentially damaging someone else's health then, in your eyes, you will never be in the wrong. You are typical in your approach "But I smoke with kindness, outdoors, where the smoke has a smaller chance of getting into someone else's lungs, and I'm only stinking up one section. But I'm not an asshole about it! Therefore, non-smokers have no right to complain about the smoke which isn't absorbed by my blackened lungs."

Is that your argument? I think it is. No matter how politely you masturbate onto the homeless, trying to keep it out of their eyes doesn't make it any less evil.
>> Anonymous
I think cigarettes should be outlawed and pot should be legalized.

Nobody would want to smoke tobacco if they could just grow their own pot.

>> Anonymous
>>67563

Usually there are no non-smokers around to complain about the smoke -- and the ones that pass by wave to me if they're regulars at the mall (I've worked there for FAR too long) or just don't even notice. I do my best to stay out of the way and the times when, once in a blue moon, someone comes by and starts bitching about how OMG IT'S MY AIR TOO WHY ARE YOU SMOKING YOU HORRIBLE, EVIL MAN.

Funny thing about those people: They usually see me smoking and make a b-line for me. If they'd just kept walking, their air would've been perfectly fine.

At least I'm not like the annoying Hot Topic kids, middle-aged overweight businessmen, or self-absorbed fashionista bitches who sit around riiiight outside the doors and light up. Yeah, the trash cans there have ashtrays on top, but it's fucking inconsiderate.

And please, you lost when you made a ridiculous analogy to jerking off onto the homeless (hot at that may sound).

i've be on /fit/ since the beginning and this is the biggest non sticky thread we have had yet.
4chanarchive has no threads from /fit/ yet and i think this should be archived both as it deserves it and we need to break our cherry.

I second the nomination for an archive. This thread must survive, to serve as a symbol of hope to some and a festering pile of shit to others. The debate was sometimes illogical, immoral, and idiotic (ok most of the time), but there were some keen insights displayed as well. Future generations of mis/fit/s will surely benefit from this treasure trove of knowledge and troll.

See this is the thing I don't understand. I see people in this thread saying yea I smoke but I can do this, this and this. But have you ever thought that if you didn't smoke you could do better then your current achievements?

Okay so smoking when young might possibly not be bad for you, but chances are that it is. Its not like you'll smoke when your young and then when you get around your mid-30s you'll be like ok its time to stop. And even if that happens, quitting will be hell, just ask anyone who has quit and they'll tell you their troubles with cravings and whatnot.

I suppose. All forms of totalitarianism start to blur at some point. I agree about communism, on paper it doesn't sound so bad, but we both know that its inherently flawed and could never work without some kind of dictatorship.
