Currently I do no exercise and am in average shape and eat well but I would like to tone up a bit. Would I notice any improvement from doing sit ups, press ups and squats till I feel tired twice a day? (waking up and just before bed)

Yeah but be careful you'll probably start looking like Ronnie Coleman after a few days.

lol, I don't want to be black. let me rephrase the question. What would be a good morning and evening routine that would actually make a difference?

start lifting heavy regularly. it'll take years for you to get xbawks huge. i say three months of heavy compound lifting and you should be set. need to continue attending the gym afterwards to maintain your gains.

if you're one of these annoying idiots who wants to do it without going to the gym, download that naked warrior book and learn all about bodyweight excercies. do pushups pullups situps squats and plyometrics till it hurts and you can't do any more. rest. repeat.
