is casein REALLY worth it? i've heard about it's anti-catabolism effects and so forth but how well does it really work?

I dont want to be suckered into buying one of those bodybuilding extras that only gives a miniscule effect like ZMA

Yes. Just don't be expecting miracles. What I do is I drink a shake made with 1 scoop of whey, 1 scoop of casein, and some vanilla extract right before bed. Like literally right before. I'll have the shake and turn out the lights to try to get to sleep.

Also, just so you know, casein protein is some really bitter shit. Ridiculously bitter. So expect to have to sweeten it with some artificial sweetener if you want it to be palatable.

Personally, I sweeten it with zero calorie french vanilla cappuccino mix that you can buy at grocery stores. Cause, otherwise, it's some seriously nasty smelling and nasty tasting shit.

Whey takes 1-2 hours to digest.
Casein takes 2-7 hours to digest.

One's slow, the other is fast.

bingo, that's all because you can't be drinking whey while you sleep. technically you only need casein protein, when you cannot afford to lose not even some decimal amount of muscle while sleeping so for advanced lifters with a good mass. body breaks down some muscle while you sleep, and casein prohibits that process.

the benefit to slow-absorbing protein is that it ISN'T quick-absorbing protein. whey is still your best bet for PWO shakes, but some people like to still take supplements just to fill out their requisite protein needs. and casein is good for that.

me, i just stick to a whey/casein blend and use it for both situations.
