Olympic Lifts: BANNED. Anonymous
/fit/:

So, my college gym banned Olympic lifts, what should I do, short of joining another gym (not possible)?
>> Anonymous
Do them anyway.

Talk to them about changing their shitty rules?
Use supplemental lifts?
>> Anonymous
sucks for you. Your college must not care about its athletic teams at all. Find a new gym
>> Anonymous
buy their stuff for cheap when they sell.
>> Anonymous
just curious but why did they ban them?

and unless they change their rules or you set up a bad ass home gym I think you're boned... or you can just do them anyways and see if the staff thinks its a BS rule or if someone is douche enough to enforce it.

I am guessing because of the risk of injury and maybe people were dropping weights? I don't really know the entire story, it's the UCB gym if anyone attends and can shed some light.

And I am stuck in the dorms at, too cramps for any sort of weight lifting there.

>>68460

As I said, it's a college gym and is essentially included in the college cost -- it's 10 dollars a semester.
>> Anonymous
My former gym banned them a while ago too, I moved.
>> Anonymous
>>68457
Please. I imagine the college has a separate gym/gyms for their athletic department.
>> Anonymous
>>68542
Yep, and last I checked Cal's sports are highly regarded.
>> Anonymous
Ok, I just looked at their policy and this is as stated:

"The following exercises are prohibited: Olympics lifts (snatches, cleans, jerks or versions of these exercise) or any exercise where there is no control of the movement. Staff reserve the right to prohibit any exercise based on safety concerns. RDL’s and controlled push presses are permitted."

Think I can get by without the aforementioned, they didn't mention dead lifts, so I think I am fine.
>> Anonymous
>>68566
what's an RDL?
>> Anonymous
>>68569

Romanian Deadlifts. Pretty much, a cross between regular and stiff-legged deadlifts. Very controlled, lower weight than regular deadlift, but you probably won't get as much gains doing that all the time.

http://orgs.jmu.edu/strength/Exercise_Technique/romanian_deadlift.htm

Dude, your college sucks. Do they have a weightlifting team? A football team? They would have to use their own gym because those policies blow. Let me guess, they don't let you use chalk because it's 'messy'. What fucktards.

You know what? I would just go ahead and do deadlifts and squats anyway. Just stay away from fast, jerky movements (snatches, cleans, etc.) and you should be good.

romanian deadlift

olympic lifting is fun, but I wouldn't shit your pants over this rule unless you plan on competing. Just do overhead squats, speed pulls off a platform, push press, etc.
>> Anonymous
OP, here you go.

http://www.exrx.net/Lists/PowerExercises.html

Over to the upper left, the only thing you can do is the push press and RDL. But like I said earlier, you can probably do front squats with no problem. It isn't a jerky movement, and that's what they want to eliminate. Still draconian to me, but it's their gym (well, really it's yours, but they make the rules).
>> Anonymous
do the lifts anyway. keep doing them and doing them until you have so much explosive strength that if anybody tries to kick you out for doing them, you can kick them in the face with your ENERGY LEGS
>> Anonymous
>>68573
Haha, here's their ish on chalk:

"Collars must be used on all Olympic and curl bars at all times. The use of chalk is not allowed in the facility. Please use a spotter when necessary."

Also, the banned lifts "Olympics lifts (snatches, cleans, jerks or versions of these exercise) or any exercise where there is no control of the movement" shouldn't include normal dead lifts, should they? By that description I can't really see them using it to ban dead lifts.

And yes, the Cal athletics uses their own gym.
>> Anonymous
Oh, and they have squat racks, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Where are you located? A lot of weightlifting gyms only charge a monthly/yearly fee to belong to the USAW, and the coaches are dying to teach people the lifts due to the dying of the sport (In America, atleast).

Unfortunately, weightlifting gyms are few and far between.

UC Berkeley.

Since I don't know where that is, here is a directory of all USAW sponsored gyms in America.

However, that doesn't mean there's no privately owned gyms that show Olympic lifts.

Clearly you're either a faggot or a bleeding-heart liberal, so who gives a shit?

Nice, good to know you are the stereotypical mouth-breathing weightlifter loser-douchebag. Enjoy your slow march toward muscle atrophy and then shortly thereafter your realization that you wasted your life --but there's still heaven, right?

Enjoy your time hanging out in a city full of hippies, bums, and failure.

Berkeley is a fucking shithole. I have no idea why anyone would choose to live there when San Francisco can be easily accessed by public transportation.

Because I attend UC Berkeley... I am not living half an hour away in SF (by bart) and pay an ungodly amount of money for some shitty apartment when I can live fine in UCB.

UCB is generally seen as a 'shit hole' by those who are afraid of the culture; it's perfectly understandable that most people can't handle Berkeley, it's just not an average American city, and you, clearly, are not able to handle the city --it's fine, though. No one is forcing you to expose yourself to the disagreeable parts of life, but I, for one, could not live like that.

No good clubs.
No good bars.
No good parks.
No good beaches.
No good museums.
Rent = same as SF

Yeah, Berkeley KICKS ASS BRAH!!!!!!!!!!

I could care less, I am there for my undergraduate work, and am moving on to somewhere on the East Coast in 2 years. It's awesome being ripped and brilliant at the same time.

Not the other guy, but what? I live in Phillly and winter SUCKS. I'd love to live someplace where it never snowed or got humid...
>> Anonymous
hi, try living in phoenix, az (or worse kingman/yuma) and you'll soon find that a 90 degree heat with 90 percent humidity is NOTHING compared to 115+ temperatures at 0 percent humidity

I'm not going for the weather, I am going for grad school, most likely HYP; though, if I get lucky I could be at Oxford/Cambridge in England --how's that for weather?

10$ per semester = crappy gym.

>>68566
jesus fucking christ. they've banned all the most effective training forms. freeweights are what really make you strong, they recruit significantly more muscles to do the work. machines are pussy machines. those exercises you listed are better than any machine.

they're not leaving any room for common sense. anyone stupid enough to throw uncontrolled a heavy weight indoors deserves to be tossed on their ass in any gym with any rules. these rules are made by the nonfit. i'm so angry at this retardedness.
>> Anonymous
>>69210

The gym is $10 a semester because it's subsidized, in part, by tuition.

Yea, I really try to only use free weights when I can. On another note, do you think they'll ban deadlifts from what they mentioned?
>> Anonymous
>>69153
Actually, the weather in England is usually quite good. It's just a common stereotype that it's always shitty. It snowed here yesterday, and we've had amazingly warm days all this week (of course, excluding the snowey day)
>> RSI guy !HjbWRiSTJ.
>>69216
they've already banned the best, the rest is just downhill from there. they've already made up their minds. that gym is now meaningless and a waste of time. either change their minds or leave.
>> Anonymous
>>69234
Well, there is a 24 hour fitness 20 minutes away (walking time); I may join there, but it's 40 dollars per month... Unsure, atm.
>> RSI guy !HjbWRiSTJ.
>>69278
try a day pass for 15$ or whatever it is, could be less. ask for the tour. put in one good session. see if it's similar, better, worse.
