What would happen if you were to do a heavy weightlifting routine with lots of compound lifts, high weight/low reps etc. but combined with a inadequate diet of low calories/protein? Since weightlifting basically damages muscle fiber, and nutrients are the building blocks used to rebuild the muscle...could you theoretically lose strength in the long term, constantly breaking down your body and not helping to rebuild it? Or would you gain strength, just really slowly?

Probably not the best idea.

Looks like I didn't read the entire question properly. Inadequate protein would mean that you don't gain any stength, and you probably would lose it, longterm.

if you don't eat enough carbs, your body will use the protein stored in your muscles to convert in to glucose (I think, little rusty on terms) but anyway your body converts protein into energy and thus you will not gain muscle size or strength.

gains + fatloss. i eat small meals with no fats and no carbs. its hard to find that balance but this is what good bodybuilders do.
