anyone on /fit/ do any martial arts that involve high kicks? i've been trying to loosen my joints so i could throw high kicks (going to take hapkido i think) and was wondering if /fit/ knew anything about stretching ones joints.

It looks like you put your feet on the pads and then turn the wheel so your legs spread.

All kinds of nasty thoughts in my head now

If that's true, that thing would probably be the most hilarious workout ever.

We have two of those machines in my gym. One where you have to squeeze your legs together, another where you have top push them apart. It's kind like chest flies, only it's for your legs...

Anyway, my gym has them where they are facing the wall, so the people using them don't have to look too foolish.

>top push them apart

TO push them apart, excuse me.

op here

yea, they have those at my gym as well, but i can max out on going backwards with them, so i need to intensify my stretching i guess. not to mention but when your doing say a knife kick (basically a verticle split) it would help if i was capable of doing one lol.

so i take it that means no one knows anything of stretching. you have failed me for the last time /fit/!

I've heard static stretching can only get you so far, so your going to have to do some kind of dynamic motion... like kicking =p

I do Tae Kwon Do. We do lots of stretching.

Standing, spread your stance out as far as possible, bend at the hip to your left and right as far as possible, not arching your back.

Sit in a split as far as you can, and lean heavily to the left, then right, then center. Repeat like 3 times.

Normally this one has a partner to help you expand and tug on something, but if you're alone it'll be tough.

Get into as deep of a split as you can, if you have a partner, they put their feet on your ankles and push out, helping you stretch. They then grab your belt and pull you in, helping you stretch.

That is a killer. Figure out how to do it yourself by using a machine or a wall or something.

I wasn't very flexible to start and am only 5'10", but in my prime I could side kick a target that was 6' high without jumping. I could also execute ax kicks onto an opponents collar bone at a height of about 6' as well.

So basically all those stretches help.

op again

finally an answer i was looking for :D thank you kind anon. yea i'm about 5'7 or 5'8. do you think machine in pic would help at all? or is it pointless?

Yeah I guess it would help. Take it to where you're comfortable and then slowly crank it a little bit more and hold it.

We had to hold it for 30-60 seconds on our hardest stretches. So get to where its still kind of comfortable, then take it a little bit further, and hold it.

Be careful though, as you can give yourself a sore muscle really quickly, or slightly nudge your bone out of the hip socket if you move too fast. If it starts to feel like something is shifting out of place, stop the stretch.

A little discomfort and a pulling sensation right in the groin is normal.

Hapkido is bullshit. Do muay thai.

I did Shiaolin + alot of other martial arts. I got flexible by stretching everyday, go as low as you can, and put your leg up on a rail and bend, etc..

Google - http://www.fightingarts.com/reading/article.php?id=15

Also, if you're really into it, read stretching scientifically. gooooood book.

Fellow Hapkidoist here .... you should do it.

If you do this type of forced stretching you should go really really slowly. I only stretch using my body, the ground, high vantage points such as dressers, fences and and railngs, or with the help of another person(because a person will respond to your communications to ease off and can support you better in forced stretches).

Make sure you get an old experienced korean guy to be your hapkido instructor.

OP's pic is useless, Static stretching won't help you throw high kicks, what you need to do is to actually practise kicking high. PLZl2 dynamic stretch
