i know this isnt the most popular answer, but learning wrestling, especially takedowns, will do a lot for you in a street fight. once you get the guy on the ground and maintain a dominant position, you dont really need to know how to properly strike. bjj is good but a lot of instructors neglect standup and only teach ground game.

I have 5 years of karate, 2 years of judo, 2 years of kickboxing. I am currently doing boxing now, and I hope to take some more soon. I don't really learn them for self defense although I seem to be creating a pretty good resume for myself. I just switch it up after completing the highest level and then switch to another one for variety. Oddly enough, without realizing it, it would seem I've become a pretty good fighter.

I compete sometimes.
I just do it now because it is routine. I do it for the exercise and relaxation, mostly. The self defense aspect comes in handy, but I do not specifically take all these martial arts just to say "I know this and this, I could kill you, fight me" or whatever.

I'm taking Krav Maga as well. It's so amazingly brutal. I've taken some other forms of martial arts before, and this blows them ALL out of the water.

What I love is that it builds off of instincts, rather than rewriting them like a lot of other forms do.

Also, I've lost 40 pounds since I started.
>> Anonymous
I'm taking up Krav Maga too, it's the only one 100% applicable to real life situations.

I've been mugged before and been in situations where I had to take people out, brute strength and reaction time I have but I could really use some technique. I've seen Krav Maga full contact "no quarter" sparring which is so awesome to watch. Nobody holds back any punches, all of it is there to prepare you for real life situations.

I live in Rotterdam, the Compton of Holland.. you need to protect yourself here.

I've done a bit of both Eskrima and Krav Maga.

I did the Eskrima because I pretty much always have a knife handy, and the Krav for general unarmed self defense.

The Eskrima is cool because it's essentially an adaptable platform for fighting with any small weapon. Knives, clubs, sticks, aluminum baseball bats, chair legs, etc. You use all the same forms, but you learn how to adapt them to the size and shape of the weapon you're using.

krav maga is a pile of shit just like every other hand to hand when considering self defense these days.

lol karate mcdojos have been teaching the exact same weapon defenses since the 80's. and for fighting its no better than anything else. you think a muay thai boxer isn't going to know how to kick you in the nuts? a boxer isn't going to know how to headbutt? a jew-jitsuka isn't going to know how to eye gouge? you gotta be joking fool.

the only real "self defense" today is a gun.

neither is used in combat. guns are.
>> Anonymous
>>354225

You're a fucking idiot.

What you get out of Krav that you don't get out of the other arts is practical experience defending against the worst possible situation. Multiple opponents, armed opponents, opponents larger than you, etc. You practice these real world applicable situations rather than learning a lot of systematized, codified forms that may or may not have any practical value outside of sparring a similarly trained practitioner of the art.

Additionally, you learn how to assess the danger level of a situation and react accordingly. Maybe you're carrying a weapon, but your assailant is just some drunken fratboy. Krav will teach you how to use the appropriate level of forceful response to end the situation quickly. It will also teach you how to react in those situations where drawing your weapon to defend your life, or running like hell are the appropriate responses.
>> Anonymous
>>354243

Haha, practical experience.

Israelfag here.

>>354225
>>354234

You are missing the point entirely. Nobody is advocating that should you find yourself in an armed robbery you use your fists to punch out armed gunmen one by one.

Krav Maga is a backup skill, how often do you think the ISF use it? It's something you hope to never need to use. Krav Maga technique is nothing special, what it teaches you is situational awareness in real life situations.

The gun disarm techniques for example take their cue from magicians, its distraction and slight of hand more than anything. With practice it will give you a chance to diffuse a situation in a split second that other people would face with certain death. The key word here is CHANCE.

I know that sounds really lame but it's kind of hard to explain if you've never done it with a teacher. Krav Maga isn't about strength, its about speed and leverage.

Don't call it bullshit unless you've tried it first.

Aikido is a good one to learn after you have experience in other martial arts. That way you can question the hell out of your sensei and make sure he isn't feeding you a pile of shit. Or more like kumite kata no. 3.

No one seems to understand nowadays that the better the technique the more difficult it is. Techniques have been taken from traditional arts and dumbed down to make them easier to learn but at the same time not as effective. Especially traditional japanese martial arts each revolve around their own specific single skill from which stems all the techniques for that system. That's what a fighting system is, not some pile of miscellaneous techniques without any central unifying rule. Traditional arts are systematic and training is codified because that's how you can learn a vast amount of difficult skill without having to practice each one in excessive amounts because each is an application of the central skill which is trained through basic exercises that evolve into more complex configurations.

Sure you can become a descent fighter faster with Krav Maga and MMA, but your maximum potential will be significantly lower and you cannot maintain that level as you get old and weak. Sure, it'll take many years to reach the same level in traditional arts but then there is no limit for your ability, not unless you live many centuries.

No one values that you can train and get better for your whole life. It's this foul culture that wants instant gratification. What ever happened to growing as a person? You train to become better. You don't have to define the manner in which you become better in such a narrow way. Just train to be better.
>> Anonymous
>>354470

lol sure is TMAnuthugger in here

Go back to your kata, kid. I'll be training against resisting opponents (you know, that way I can see if the techniques actually work)

Enjoy your purposeless struggling that, in the end, results in achieving nothing but a bloated ego.

At least I'm happy with myself now, tomorrow and when I die as an old man, because I'll have something to work on and improve for all that time.

This is attitude is precisely what is wrong with western minds. People want to be strong in order to be stronger than others, which means constant dissatisfaction due there always being someone stronger. A lasting satisfaction is when you achieve motion toward your goal. Set your goal high enough on a path that is impassable nowhere and start climbing.

Every part of traditional training is important because it isn't solely for the purpose of fighting skill. It's to learn a general rule for how to use your body. Once you have that general rule, you interpolate and seek a more general rule - one for how to live your life. For example self-discipline is trained which includes courtesy, you know.
