I've got a problem. I want to use SQUATZ as part of my regime, but I tried them last week and I CANNOT get to parallel without my heels coming off the ground. What can I do?

do less weight?
you're dumb, lol.

work on your form

If your heels raise you also work you calves, I think? good job?

Form needs work. Can you do a squat without weight? If so, practice them. You may need to work on hip flexibility.

Half the world spends most of its day in a full squat; you'll get there.

You're supposed to keep your feet flat.

It's not to much weight, I can't even do it with just the bar or without anything. I can't keep my balance and would fall backwards if I kept my feet flat.

Do more air squats, try to go slow and hold at the bottom. You must have absolutely no core strength or balance if you can't even squat properly with nothing. Just work on form with nothing/the bar until your body builds up a little bit of stability.

Try putting something under you to squat down to. Make sure it's low enough that when your ass touches, your thighs are below parallel. Having a platform, or even a ball or something, to rest on if you lose balance should help your confidence levels.

It can be easier with weight because there is more pressure to pull stretch tight muscles that would otherwise act as springs.

sit waaayyyy back. The motion begins with you pushing your hips back, not a dipping of the knees. get your upper back tight, take a deep breath, kick your hips way back, and bend your knees when it feels right. all the weight should be on your heels.

are you spreading yours feet far enough apart and pointing them slightly outward?

Read it, learn from it and work on your calves flexibility.

I'm putting them out about shoulder length or more and at about a 15 degree angle. I think I need flexibility in my ankles. When my knee bends my heel just won't stretch that far.
>> Anonymous
your ankles probably aren't flexible enough. try 'prying', that is, without weight get down and work yourself into the lowest squat position you can and hold it there. work down lower if you can. do this a lot.

you can find info on the internet about flexibility for squats. try googling "mike robertson"+squats.

another tip is push the knees out going down, and again when you start to come back up. put an arch in the upper spine, this will keep your back in the correct position.

Go as low as you can for now, start working on increasing ankle mobility.

One thing I like are calf raises (I know, you'd expect 'em to tighten it up) but if you go super low on the eccentric before pushing back, and stretching afterwards, aside from getting sexy calves, you'll gain alot more ROM.

You are putting too much weight leaning forward.

When you're at the bottem position all of the weight should rest two places knees and back. Like an upside down equilateral triangle, bottom representing your ankles.

Stay away from squats.

stick your chest out more that should fix your problem.
>> Anonymous
widen your stance and sit way back
>> Anonymous
I have the same problem, dude. Just widen your stance and increase the angle of your ankles. You'll find the sweet spot at which everything just "works."

maybe some part hurts subtly, or isn't stretching far enough. try to determine what exactly that is, by going slowly. then fix that part, and try it again. and you're right, heels **must** stay on the ground. you'll get into a shitload of trouble if let them with that kind of weight in that form.
>> Anonymous
it means you are putting too much weights on. try squatting with just the bar.

Squats are the most overhyped and useless exercise s out there. Don't do them, do the leg press instead.
