Basically, your two options (from a medical standpoint) are to use finasteride (propecia) and or minoxidil (rogaine), or undergo hair transplant surgery.
The former is a much better place to start, and the latter isn't even an option for most people, as hair transplant surgery is outrageously expensive; although you can't argue with the results.
Hats and just shaving it all off are pretty common fixes. If you decide you don't look terrible with a shaved head, you don't have to shave it all off. I've seen guys whose hair looked pretty good if they use one of those clipper things and put like a #3 or 4 on it. If you happen to see your doctor in the next few months for any reason, you might just ask him if he has any suggestions.
