Hey /fit/. Is it better to exercise before or after meals? I usually eat around 5 times a day (total 1500 calories). Here's my breakdown:

8am: 200-300 calories
12pm: 500 calories
Exercise (MWF: HIIT/cardio; TTHSat: Strength training)
3pm: 100 calories
7pm: 400-500 calories
Exercise (Stretching, Walking, Pushups, 30 minutes of Ab Workout)
10pm: cottage cheese (100 calories)
12am-1am: sleep

As you can see, I exercise usually after the "bigger" meals, but I was wondering if there is perhaps a better alternative with my eating schedule or my workout schedule. I'm currently 5'11 215 lbs (used to be 230) and my target weight is 180. Tips and suggestions greatly appreciated. Pic semi-related.

Exercise before you eat. gets ur metabolism going.

If you want to lose weight cardio before breakfast, or before a meal in general would be best. That way your body won't have much food energy and will go to fat stores sooner. If you want to gain or stay the same, I'd imagine after would be best.

Those calories look pretty low to me, even keeping in mind you want to lose weight.

EVERY PERSON ON /FIT/ NEEDS TO GO HERE:
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/metric-bmr-calculator.php

Eat 500 fewer calories to lose weight healthily or 500 more to gain.

Keep in mind for your diet to lose weight, you are going to want high protein and high fiber. Your workout schedule looks pretty solid BTW. Kudos if you're keeping up with that.

I keep posting the wrong link. You need your BMR to calculate this number, but this link is how many calories you burn in an active day.

this. exercise on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. go for endurance so put the time in. wait at least an hour after before you eat. throw some caffeine and/or l-carnitine (liquid) into yourself before too

i had some oatmeal

lifted an hour later

had a protein shake within 15m of lifting and had 3 eggs + and a gatorade within 90m of lifting

You people are absolutly retarded. This does not work.

Have you ever acctually been in a position where your body doesn't have any glucose readily available? Exercising purely on adipose gluconeogenesis and FFA means you won't be able to tip over around 60-70% of your max heart rate. Your body doesn't just "burn more fat hurrr durr" if it needs more energy, theres a fucking limit on how much energy can be derived from lipids, the rest is limited readily available glucose trying to make ends meet and after a point you body will start catabolising muscle for protein to use as an energy source.

Also, not eating for an hour after exercise? You must be fucking trolling or unable to construct a fucking sentance.

FUCK YOU /fit/ I swear you're all fucking trolls and retards.

Caffiene pills work though.

Ok so I did the harris-benedict-equation and i got a 3500 calorie result, so I guess that means I should eat 3000 calories a day, but that seems like a lot. Can anyone check to make sure I did it right? Male 24 6'1 206lbs I exersize 3-5 days and plays sports 2 days a week (kendo)

ah yes, the inevitable paranoid meathead response. if you really believe the body will start catabolising in an hour because it hasn't had anything to eat, you're more fucking retarded than you already appear. any losses would be miscroscopic at most. and yeah, don't eat for an hour after as the metabolism is accelerated at this point. now shut the fuck up

I'd double check, but I'm too lazy to get the unit converter out.

I eat 1.5 - 2.5 hours before working out, depending on what i eat.
fat stuff: wait longer
high carb, low other stuff: wait shorter

lol fucking WHAT!?

have fun watching all your muscles disappear.

Catabolising what? I'll assume you ment muscle. Usually the body will start catabolising muscles for protein around the three hour mark of cardiovascular exercise. This response is accelerated by bad nutrition stratagies (such as those posted here.)

Still saying don't eat for an hour after cardiovascular exercise? Your metabolism is accelerated? Oh no!

If you goal is to atrophy yourself into heart falure go for it. If your goal is increased performance or muscle mass throw away your nutrition fads you got of the interwebs.

Seriously, you can't be anything but a retard or a troll.

Protip: I don't do resistance training.

lol. people like you make me laugh. you really, really think this is possible? you're so fucking stupid it's hilarious. a person is actually going to collapse of a heart attack because they spent an hour on a treadmill and didn't eat for an hour after? i can tell you don't do resistance training. i sincerely doubt you do or know anything. continue living in your paranoid little fantasist world of freaking the fuck out every time you're not stuffing your face, you half wit

well, technically speaking, isnt EVERYTHING you do both BEFORE and AFTER a meal?
>> Anonymous
>>300460

Of course not.
>> w/ CSCS + BS in exerc phys
i guess i should be slightly helpful

training after a fast of 2-3 hrs INCREASES growth hormone release, BUT also increases catabolism relative to training with pre, peri, and post workout supplementation/meals.

so eat 1st and eat often. irregardless if you are trying to LOSE weight or GAIN it, you need to build lean muscle tissue, so eat 1st (and during) your training.

Hey /fit/. OP here. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. According to the Harris Benedict Equation, I should be 3700 calories in order to maintain my weight, or to lose 2 lbs a week, be eating 2700 calories a day (I multiplied by the 4th option - very active). However, I have been pretty strict with my caloric intake, fluctuating between 1500-2000 calories as I posted earlier, yet I am only losing about 1-2lbs a week. What's going on here?

Losing weight takes TIME. You need to get that in your head right now. There's no shortcuts at all.

Just to give you and idea. I eat 3000 to 3500 Cal a day to gain weight, but I'm also 5'5" and 140 lbs.
