I got into an argument today about going to a gym vs swimming.

The argument generally consisted of the following things:

Pluses for the gym:
Able to work every muscle in the body.
Choose weights
Better for skin (you sweat the gunk out of your pours)

Good points for swimming:
Good for skin, you sweat directly into water
All nessesary muscles are worked
Less time consuming
Much more fun

Swimming is far better.

Swimming is total body. You work your legs, arms, torso, lungs, and heart all at once. It won't get you a bodybuilder body, or let you do SQUATZ, but it's a killer workout if you don't do sissy laps.

But goddamn I hate cold water.

oh fuck I want to go on that slide.

good job trying to sage appropriately. but still a fail.

My pool is full of old people 24/7. they always clog up the fast lane thinking the are super speed and I never ever get a decent workout.

Get one of those harnesses that let you swim in place. You can paddle as furiously as you wish, then.

Also, swimming cannot replace a gym workout. Swimming will increase flexibility and endurance, but will add virtually no strength.

You won't become bigger swimming.
Unless you swim against a current and eat a shitload the counter the calories you burn, i guess, but it still ain't got nothing on the gym

Swimming is still fucking awesome, though

CHLORINE FUCKS UP NAILS AND HAIR

I herd swimming is bad for fat loss because the temperatures and excessive moisture encourage the body to store more fat in order to keep buoyant and maintain internal temperatures.

and swimsuits, I used to swim all the time and after a couple of months my blue swimsuit was purple/pink color.

you herd wrong, TROWLL.. pool water is never THAT cold. minimums are 75 degrees, usually up to 80 or above.

you don't see people keeping fat around when then run outside in the winter because the air temperature is cold

if anything, the water assists in cooling your body, so the body doesn't expend as much energy into evaporative cooling, allowing you to engage in exercise at a higher intensity for a longer period.

To be fair, some pools barely heat the water, and it can get brutally cold. During the late winter when I was on my high school swim team they would turn off the heat in the morning after PE to save electricity, and consequently we'd be freezing our asses off in the afternoon. One day it was so cold even doing sprints barely warmed me up. That sucked.

truth

false- you will gain some strength if you actually make it a workout. but you won't get any of the hugeness associated with lifting weights.

>>98244
it's not too bad on your nails, and if you wear a cap (which you should), just wet your hair and rub in a tiny bit of conditioner before you swim to protect your hair from the chemicals

>>98249
wrong. it's aerobic exercise, which burns fat like a motherfucker, and it's total-body, so you lose fat all over.

>>98254
you can slow this down (but not stop it -_-) by rinsing out your suit really well after each time you swim

Swimming is the best. The. Best. It's kindof a lot of trouble (especially if you're in college, like myself) and if you don't know what you're doing, you might be better off doing something else, but for anyone who is even semi-familiar with proper technique, you can do laps 3 times a week and stay in amazing shape.
Of course you'll smell like chlorine all the time :/

>and it's total-body, so you lose fat all over

you pretty much lost any credibility with that claim. you cannot lose weight any other way but "all over"

have you never seen those guys with totally jacked arms and a flabby gut and lower body, or someone with muscular thighs and loose arms? I was just saying that things like this don't happen in swimming, you work your whole body at once so muscle tone develops smoothly all over.

i'd prefer swimming anytime, not a gym person either. and since i'm moving out in a few months and going to be living pretty much next to this state's largest swimming hall, so... related questions:

should i get a bathing cap to protect my hair? it's kind of a FAMILY FUN SWIMMING HALL so do you know if there are any good times to go regularly? like mondays in the morning?
i'm turning 20 and i'm not a bad swimmer, but are there usually trainers to show you the right techniques if you ask? or would lessons be worth it, even?
how many laps how many times a week? or generally, how long? i want to use this as workout.
any general mistakes you can make?

YES GET A BATHING CAP, ALSO GOGGLES
they look a little silly but they're infinitely helpful, especially if you've got long hair. For a family-friendly pool you will definitely want to go in the mornings during the week; screaming kids are the worst. Have you done any real swimming in the past? It's easy to just windmill your arms and thrash your legs and feel like you're doing something, but really all that does is wear you the fuck out for nothing... I'd say read up online about technique, but you probably don't need lessons unless you're a really weak swimmer.

thanks! i will, i don't mind goggles. i've done "professional, lol" swimming for two years from third to fifth grade but haven't swum for nearly eight years after that and i had minor trouble even staying at the surface when i went to the beach once, probably only a loss of feeling for water though.
