Overhead Squats, /fit/, what's your opinion?

I've been doing 'em with just the bar since the beginning of this week as a stretching exercise, they've been superb so far for my hips + upper back...

Can't wait to figure out a good way to work heavier ones into my routine (it'll be a while, as I'm planning to do Rippetoe until I plateau, most likely 3-4 months from now)

Anyway, what do you think?

Don't drop the damned bar, that's what I think.

i think overhead squats puts more emphazis on your shoulders than your legs.

you can lift more weight with low bar position..

so i think overhead squat is for people who already got high lift in squat

You're all wrong, it's for the core. The natural inclination of the upper body is to tip forward while squatting. If you're trying to keep a bar above your head you have to keep your back flexed in order to keep it there while you squat.

And what exactly does this stretch?

overhead squats are generally used to help the olympic lifts. specifically the snatch. they develope balance and flexibility. and jews. always jews.

OP here, yep... they are great for flexibility... All squats are good for hip flexibility, of course, but pushing your chest up while your arms are sort of stuck up there on the bar really stretches the upper back no matter what>>109037
says.

and yes, i am indeed of the hebrew persuasion...

Ok, but how does this make you flexible? I do OHS all the time, and while it's really helped with my posture and lower back pain and core strength, I really don't feel any more flexible.

Overhead squats are a frickin awesome exercise. They work almost your whole body.

Perhaps you didn't start out as inflexbile as I am.

Sweet. Snatch the bar, extend overhead and squat. Pwnt.

There must be something to it though, because every time I've read about a new lift they're always like "It'll make you more flexible!" and I have no idea how freeweights can make someone more flexible, but I'm interested in becoming more flexible.

Great thread. I do a shit load of pullups and my upper back is pretty much glued together. My hip flexibility is also pretty shitastic. So, thank you OP for one of the best ideas from /fit/.

Do not thank me, thank Dan John... (danjohn.org)

check out his site... most advice directed toward discusfags, skirtwearing caber tossers, and old men who have been lifting for decades, but much of it is bleeding edge thinking...
