Martial Arts thread 2.0.

Ok so I'm 20, 5'6", 130lbs, and just now getting interested in taking up martial arts. I only started researching it yesterday, and found this option.

http://www.mabjj.com/

They teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu primarily, but also Muay Thai and Boxing as the instructor believes in giving students a "complete game" (striking & groundwork).

The Puyallup lessons are 15 miles from my home, and I'd be getting there on a bicycle. So the commute alone would do a lot for my fitness. Unfortunately it looks like they only offer lessons there two days a week, compared to their Seattle location where they offer classes all week round.

Still, looks promising. If I really got into it I could consider taking a bus to Seattle for more frequent instruction.

Thoughts?

That is sport bushido right there, that will get you killed in a real world situation. Do something useful like combat sambo or krav maga. If you do that UFC stuff you are gonna get curb stomp. short, or stabbed. Or all 3

Holy shit OP, I go there on tuesdays and thursdays. It is on canyon road. You should come in for a trial. My name is mike, I usually wear an all red rash guard, I have been going for almost 2 years now.

Hey OP, what is your name? If you want, when you come in, I could say you are my guest, and you could come in for a month, for free.

By UFC shit you mean muay thai and jiu jitsu, the useless, impractical martial arts amirite?

yes

OP should learn something for the streets like Parkour. Sambo or Krav Maga. You can pull guard on the streets

CANT pull guard

Something you should know, the north west is one of the best places in the US to find competitive Judo training. I'm training at the YMCA in Lakewood, and we had the chance to train with one of the guys who's going to the Olympics.

Jesus christ you are retarded. BJJ practitioners know that pulling guard in the street isnt a fucking option.

Krav maga is not a martial art it is self defense there is a VERY big difference. If you pull krav maga on some drunken frat boy you WILL end up in prison depending on how badly you fuck him up.

Wrestling Bjj and Muy Thai are the three most practical martial arts genres out there.

lol judo.
Actually, OP is smallish, and judo is a small man's game (vertically small anyway).
For what it is worth, one of the scariest guys I know is about OP's size and does kung-fu (scary fast).
I believe OP is not asking for defense but fitness, in which case BJJ/Thai boxing/boxing is fine if not preferable.

forgot to add capoeira. ALMOST useless on 'the streets' but the conditioning required is second to none.

Without guard work you remove 95% of BJJ players game, making them defenseless like a small child flopping on the ground with their butts dragging

Don't count out Judo for fitness. We often have marathon sessions for ground and standup randori (sparring). I'm in fairly good shape and there are days when I walk out of class completely wiped out. Plus it's in a YMCA, so easy access to a very good gym.

Helio called. He told me you're a fucking moron.

BJJ isn't about the guard game. It's just the most visible part of the game because until recently most grappling styles didn't do much with that position. BJJ is about trying to get and maintain a dominant position. If you find yourself pulling guard often, you are doing something WRONG.

Thats some chi BS excuse if i ever heard one? Afraid of prison?! WTF. Krav Maga is more rigorous and street applicable MA/fitness/ self defense. Go back to your Dim Sum blow job jitsu or whatever and have fun getting your eyes gouged

Actually, on the streets, anyone can do dirty tricks. So you're going to be lying down, getting rear naked choked, and then have your eyes gouged out by the person dominating you because he knows Brazilian jujitsu.

OP, all martial arts have their pros and cons. But you should just keep an open mind to it, use common sense, and do what is effective for your body. Who knows, maybe one day Kung Fu may be super effective.

Do something that involves sparring if you just want to get fit. If you want to learn to fight (You should learn to kill/disable rather than fight) learn Krav Maga.

I was originally looking for Judo classes, and I'm still not sure whether I'd rather take a Judo class or a BJJ class. The Judo throws are pretty bad ass.
