I think deads work more overall... forearms, glutes, hams, and back. Squats work quads, glutes, hams, but not really back as much.

Do I have to break it down for you again?

Squats work a LARGER MUSCLE VOLUME through a LARGER RANGE OF MOTION than deadlifts: i.e., you do more work for each rep, which releases more hormones and other muscle-building goodness that circulates through your whole body. That's why EVERY basic strength program is based on SQUATZ - rep for rep, they are simply the best way you can spend time in the gym.

This is not to say that deadlifts are unimportant, they are VERY important, and should be a part of every program - they just have different effects than squats to and are used for a different purpose...

back is worked in stabilisation. there is a long lever from the shoulders to the hips. strong lower backs are crucial for heavy squats. not as much as deadlifts, but it can't be discounted. unless you want to go to hospital.

yeah. powerlifters tend to be the other way round, but their squat is a little different and more hip dominant. me, i prefer squats because to me explosive leg power and strength is more important. i do both of course, but squats come first.
