Hey /fit/, I decided to start running on the treadmill about a week ago. First time I ran I did about 1.3 miles then the next 2 days I ran about 1.6. After the third day my knees hurt really fucking bad and it was hard to walk. About a week later they still hurt. Anyway, this is probably because I ran too much without giving my body rest (this is the most exercise I've gotten in a looong time) and I think I have crappy knees anyway. So I'm going to wait about another week or so, whenever my knees stop hurting and start running again. But this time I'm wondering how I can ease myself into running 4-5 days a week. How many/what days a week should I run and how much should I run? When should I start bumping up the distance and amount I run?

Reason they hurt i because you probably have bad running form and because you are running on a treadmill. Run outside and read up on proper form.

don't quit exercise altogether for a week, walk for a while on the treadmill instead

You are probably a moderate pronater, and are running in a neutral shoe. Chances are you need more medial stability.

Go get fitted for a pair of running shoes. RUNNING SHOES MOTHERFUCK.
Not payless. Not walmart. Running specific shoes. Expect to pay roughly 95 bucks.
