It depends on how little exercise you've been doing over the period of the last few years and how much you weigh.
If you seriously haven't had much physical activity and are fairly to significantly over-weight - yeah push-ups can be difficult.
However, if it's joint pain...try the 2 things suggested earlier. If you can't do many of those, you might have to resort to other methods of strengthening those muscle groups.
