Polyphasic sleep Anonymous
specifically the Uberman sleep cycle. i happened to see it mentioned in a magazine, and have since read up on it, and it looks interesting.

if you don't know, the uberman sleep cycle is where you take six 20-minute naps each 24 hour period, as opposed to one eight-hour sleep. supposedly in this way you condition your body to enter REM sleep within minutes of fallling asleep.

after the first week or two of extreme tiredness, your body adapts and you supposedly have increased energy and alertness, more vivid dreams and greater chances of lucid dreaming, and of course, more free time. but not a lot of research has been done, so the long-term health effects are still unclear.

any thoughts? has anyone tried this?

i've considered it. but it doesn't seem conductive to quick muscle recovery.

From what I remember, this works for awhile, but over time you start exhibiting conditions of someone who doesn't sleep at all, because you aren't getting enough REM sleep to repair the damaged cells, specifically brain cells. You end up with a damaged cell deficit over time. 6 20 minute naps, even assuming that you could achieve REM sleep in like 30 secs, would only equal to an hour and twenty minutes each night, where as normal people are getting I think just over 4 hours worth of REM cycles if you sleep for 8 hours.

wow not sleeping sounds so healthy!

I did this, but when I started working out it just floored me.

I started taking 90-minute naps after workouts, 20-minutes before. Eventually I just did regular sleeping again.

I actually just learned about this in my psychology class and a question was on the final about it. The truth is, is that humans cant function properly for a long time. You will not be as efficient in your daily actions and you could eventually just crash.

So working out does not mix with this? Good to know, I was going to try it.

I know a guy who did give this a shot, but eventually gave up. He said that when it's time for a nap, it's time for a fucking nap right the fuck away, and if you do something else instead, you end up tired as hell and over sleep at the next nap and everything goes out of whack. So unless you live like a monkey in the jungle and can just lie down and rest at any old time, I doubt you will get this working.

Sounds crappy. I need to sleep at least nine hours a day. I just don't get up otherwise.
