I keep seeing the term "starvation mode" thrown around on this board, so I decided to research it some. I found all these detrimental effects of it, but I couldn't really find out how it comes about. OBVIOUSLY it is due to someone starving themselves, but how long does it take to set in? I mean if I normally eat 1500-2000 calories a day, then one day I just don't eat, for whatever reason, is my body going to go into starvation mode? Is the next meal I eat going to turn to just fat? I guess my question is, to what extent would someone have to starve themselves before their body decided they were starving?

starvation mode isn't nearly as horrifying as people here seem to think, your body is still going to use the great majority of the food you eat as energy. it takes around 3500 calories to put on a pound of fat, so you still have to eat those 3500 calories to gain it. as long as you stay active and only eat a few hundred calories below what you burn every day, you should be fine.

Still, how much does it take to go into "starvation mode" I'm not trying to starve myself or anything like that I'm just curious because people here talk about it all the time, but it seems to be a very vague subject. Just want to clarify how it actually onsets and what it does to you.

Well I lost about 20kg eating about 300-500 calories a day. it was hard but I didnt get any muscle wastage or shit like that...

That's my question, I mean surely my body isn't going to go into starvation mode if I barely eat for a day or two. I read an article that said that it takes weeks to get your body out of starvation mode. So all these people that talk about starvation mode on this board, are they just full of it or what's the deal? If a really fat man stopped eating for 2 days, his body isn't going to start deteriorating his muscles is it? If its truly a defense mechanism of the body then doesn't the body know that it should burn the fat storage before it burns muscle.
I also read that starvation mode really only occurs to people that have less than a certain percentage of body fat.

So to reiterate my question again. How long and under what circumstances does it take for a person to actually go into "starvation mode" where their body stores food as fat immidiately as opposed to burning it.

When your body begins to starve it will burn muscle for energy instead of fat.

You lose weight but not the weight you want to lose.
What's worse is that lost muscle mass means it is that much more difficult to lose fat- and easier to put fat on.

You can do the starvation stuff if you are very careful and randomly do it... but in the long run just do the basic eat healthy/exercise.

I'm pretty sure it takes three days or so to start going into "starvation mode". That's why when you zig-zag your diet you make sure not to do low-calorie days for longer than that.

Basically you shouldn't try to skip meals and eat really little like 500 calories a day. Your body would think it's not gonna get enough fuel and what happens then is that it'll store as uch calories as possible the next time you have a normal meal- meaning you might think you're shedding shit loads of weight, but your body will pile even more on once you stop, making it worse than before.

Also yes, most of what you shed is water anyway since 70% of your weight is water.

And like what most people concur on here, you;re fucked if your body decides to burn muscle as a fuel source 'cos you're being a cunt and not giving it food.

So just do exercise and eat balanced regular meals.

It's alot like sleeping, having a regular sleeping pattern is much easier on your body than sleeping all over the place. Your body likes routine.
