so /fit/ 5'11" 225pound fat guy trying to get healthy.

I understand that cardio is the best solution for weight loss. Though what is better fat burning wise, going for distance or HIIT, should i alternate or do one for a few weeks then another for a few weeks after?

Also i don't really know what to do for food. What kind of foods should i buy?Chicken, steak, i know vegetables. And how should they be cooked? any help is appreciated.

Goddamn we need an faq.

HIIT is better for fat burning, but is too intense if you can't already run.
I suggest mixing it up anyway.

Food 5-6 times a day; raises your metabolism.

Fat-burning wise, HIIT is clinically shown to be better than distance running. Although, I like to throw in some distance runs every once in awhile to mix up my workouts. Something like 80% of my runs are HIIT, the rest is long distance work.

For foods, learn how to read nutrition labels. In general, you want to stick to Jack Lalanne's advice, "If it's made by man, don't eat it." Add more colorful fruits and veggies, eat lots of lean meat, and for breads and cereals get whole grain. That's pretty much the basics, if you want more hardcore details, pick up the books Mastering the Zone and the Paleo Diet. I personally don't follow everything in those books down to the exact details, but they're good resources (LOL photocopy it) for nutrition info.

I would suggest lifting weights, particularly squats. You already have the bulk to get stronger if you start eating correctly and more muscle will help you loose fat. I eat 4 times a day, high fiber breakfast with a piece of fruit or yogurt, then 4 hours later good carbs and fruit I normally have a granola bar and an apple, then about 4 hours later lots of meat and some veges, then about 2 hours later eggs. then in 2 hours I go to sleep. I know this is about 1200-1500 calories and I should be getting a little over 2000, but I have lost 30lbs so far with this and feel great.

the 5-6 meals raising metabolism thing is more of a myth that yields good results despite being incorrect.

A lot of people are having success with intermittent fasting, give that a search.

Go read the book _Body for Life_ and then read the crossfit.com nutrition forum for pointers on Zone macronutrient ratios (40/30/30).

Most of fat loss is about eating right; the exercise is for fitness.
