Hey /fit/

I knocked 46 points off my cholesterol since last year (222 to 176), and I'm rapidly developing real bulgy muscle type stuff. I'm still going to the gym several times a week doing both weights and cardio, but I'm still not getting laid. Suggestions?

Fix your all your hair. Fix it NAO. Go to /fa/ and get tips on how to style your hair. Your current facial hair is gross, shave it off and grow a full face of scruff/short beard or something.

Also, you still need to lose a lot of weight. Just be confident and keep working on it and they will come.

On another note. I'm plateau'ing. I've been hitting the gym for 18 months or so now. I've dropped 45 lbs in the last 2 years, but lately I seem to be gaining as much muscle as I loose fat for about 3 months now. I must admit, I like the muscle, but I'm more interested in dropping the pounds. How could I better attain a happy medium?

If you're plateauing, change up your workout. Go swimming instead of running. Or biking. Or rowing. Change your pace, your distance, anything, just change it up. Even alternating between a fast pace and a slow pace is good. You just need to make your body adapt to something new.

You should only be building muscle if you're lifting high weight at low reps. If you want to stay your muscle growth but want to keep lifting, focus more on high rep, lower weight. Anything higher than 10 is generally considered more cardio focused.

You need to shave or tweeze your eye brows. See picture for what I think you would look best.

You could use a small amount of sideburns.

You need to shape your chin hair. And shave off the part hiding your neck fat. Everyone can tell you are just hiding neck fat. You look better without it.

Sharp lines are best for your face.

It also looks like you have an oil problem. Best advice for that is to find a good moisturizer. That will balance out your skin and then it wont make so much oil.

Lose the earing. Unless you don't want to look manly, then keep it. Some men can pull off wearing an earing, it doesn't look too cool on you.

Cut back on sugar, white flour, refined and processed foods.
Eat LOTS of fresh vegetables (not canned, but frozen is kinda okay as long as you don't over cook it. Thaw it and give it a fast stir fry. DO NOT MICROWAVE, it kills vitamins.). Eat WHOLE grains, quinoa is a great grain as well as amaranth.

Go walking everyday.

Find a sport that you love and do it.

Wow. You have no idea.
Alcohol is doesn't just make you fat. It messes with your entire body in a bad way.

Whole grain, sprouted bread is delicious and healthy (as long as you are not gluten intolerant.)

But the bulk of your diet should come from raw vegetables and raw nuts.
Then some fruit.
Some lean meat about the size of a card deck.
Some dairy (if you can handle it.)

If you are going to drink alcohol, limit it to 2 glasses a month and pick a great dark red wine. Because you are saving so much money on cheap alcohol, you'll be able to spend the money to buy a truly great and delicious wine.

But really, no alcohol is best.

By "loony hippie nutrition" you must mean weight loss that works.

You idiot. The only way to lose weight and KEEP IT OFF. Is to totally change the way you eat and exercise forever.

Eating well and exercising will help you lose weight AND you'll also have clearer skin, nicer hair, and you'll be able to have BETTER SEX.

Go stuff yourself with big Macs and kraft dinner. Mean while I'm going to eat delicious grass fed beef, quick cooked French green beans with olive oil and spices, and a whole grain sprouted roll with real butter. And for dessert fresh berries, drizzled with a little agave nectar and some fresh organic half and half.

I'm a game designer. So I have to sit on my ass all day. So when I get home and sometimes in the morning I exercise and I eat health.

Also, eggs are cheap and good for you especial if you buy free-ranged or Omega-3 eggs. They help your body build muscles and have lots of vitamins. The cholesterol in eggs are not harmful unless you eat way too many. I like 4 egg whites and 2 egg yolks for breakfast with a piece of fresh salmon. But I need lots of protein.

Nah, I mean weirdo moon goddess ideas like "sprouted bread" and "the bulk of your diet should come from raw vegetables and raw nuts".

Also, the cardiac health effects of moderate red wine consumption almost certainly come from the anti-coagulant properties of alcohol - wine simply doesn't contain anything else in high enough concentration.

And remind me again when, during your education as a "game designer", you learned anything at all about human metabolism? Oh, you didn't, and you're just making it up as you go along? That's cool. Of course you have to change your diet and eat correctly to maintain health. That's not exactly a news flash around here. As much credence as I give your proof by assertion, alcohol doesn't cause visceral fat. Over-accumulation of intra-peritoneal fat is linked to a variety of medical disorders, some of which may be caused or exacerbated by long-term, abusive use of alcohol. However, some of these diseases are the same diseases that regular moderate alcohol consumption has been shown to prevent. I thought this explanation about how alcohol makes you fat was good.

http://ezinearticles.com/?How-Alcohol-Makes-You-Fat&id=215762

Vinny takes a drink. As the alcohol enters into digestion, it is split into two compounds: fat and acetate. The fat is taken through the bloodstream and stored wherever Vinny tends to deposit fat. The acetate is taken into the bloodstream and used as Vinny's primary energy fuel.

If you take anything away from this article, read that last sentence again. The acetate is used as Vinny's primary energy fuel. This means that rather than burning carbohydrates, protein, or fat as a fuel, Vinny's body relies on the acetate for energy. It completely stops burning anything else. Suddenly, Vinny has a surplus of carbs, protein, and fat circulating in the body with nowhere to go. So where does it all end up? You guessed it...it's converted to fat and deposited on Vinny's waistline.

Slow twitch muscle fibers (Type I's) have impressive endurance capabilities, they are what your body recruits in order to run, cycle and other various forms of long term cardiovascular work. At the other end of the spectrum, you have your Type IIb fibers (Fast Twitch). Scientists call these fibers fast-twitch/glycolytic fibers because they contract quickly and use glucose (Carbohydrates) as a primary source of energy. (Type I fibers are slow and use fat as a primary source of energy).
Nestled in the middle are your type IIa fibers. Scientists call these fibers fast-twitch/oxidative-glycolytic fibers. These fibers have an intermediate contraction speed, but what's more interesting is training can make these type IIa fibers act more like type I fibers, or more like type IIb fibers, depending on what kind of training you do. Ofcourse, endurance training will make them act more like type I's, and intense strength training will make them act more like type IIb's.

To sum it up;
Slow twitch muscle fibers are recruited when doing cardio and trying to lose fat,
Fast-twitch help you when you're trying to make strength and muscular gains.

Supply your body with the right fuel, for the right activity.

As you are overweight (No offence whatsoever) I suggest going lighter on your joints, I suggest swimming over running, and I would also be aiming for lighter weights with about 4-5 sets of 15-20 reps.

Weight lifting burns muscle fat as everyone should know by now, however most movements in weight lifting require you to recruit MAJOR MUSCLE GROUPS. If you hit these groups FIRST with weights, you maximise their potential. After completing weights, you go for a run/swim to hit all the SMALLER muscle groups whilst also frying out your muscle fibers on your larger muscle groups (Which will be repaired at night whilst you sleep (8-9hours) with the healthy fuel you've been eating throughout the day).

If you find this useful, just tell me, and i'll continue on with some information about the metabolic rate.

An easy way to lose weight is to cut out calories from what you drink. If you drink soda, switch to diet, if you drink designer coffee shit, switch to black, if you drink alcohol, cut it back to 1 or 2 a day, and even that is too much.

I like to drink. I enjoy good beer, fine whiskey, and sugary wine (because I am a faggot when it comes to wine). I will only drink 1 or 2 days a week (weekends) and will generally only have 1 or 2 drinks, unless there is a celebration.

Regardless of any other affect, alcohol is pretty high in calories and is best avoided on a diet.

God. This thread is what is wrong with the American attitude towards weight loss.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you who believe that the only way to diet correctly is to cut out any and all unhealthy food are actually a healthy weight?

They key to a long-term, healthy diet is MODERATION. Moderation is something most people have completely forgotten exists. If you try to cut out food you like from your diet, you will crave that food, and many times those cravings will cause the failure of a diet. Eat all in moderation. Masochistic asceticism is not a weight loss plan, it is a path to certain failure.

I'm a post-doc biochemist. They're interpreting "alcohol" as used in the article's scientific sense, meaning any hydrocarbon bearing a hydroxyl group, to mean "alcohol that I can buy at the liquor store". Pb(IV)Ac is used in the laboratory to oxidize alcohols in two main reactions: creating cyclic ethers from alcohols with a proton beta- to them, and in conjunction with ozone to cleave alcohols with an adjacent C-C double bond. Neither of these reactions would used in any process related to the commercial manufacture of drinking alcohol. If there WERE Pb(IV)Ac in any food or drink preparation, we would have heard about it long ago, on account of all of the people it would have killed.

>> Anonymous
>>24993

As a follow up to this, the only reason we're having this discussion in the first place is the egregious misinterpretation of the brewing textbook posted earlier, which describes an old-fashioned methodology for the quantification of alpha acids in hops using titration of hop extract with Pb(IV)Ac. The poster I was addressing apparently took this to mean that Pb(IV)Ac was present in hops, which is absurd. He then proceeded to ask for proof that there is "no Pb(IV)Ac in alcohol", for which the actual proof is that if there WERE Pb(IV)Ac present, it would have oxidized the alcohol, and it would NO LONGER BE ALCOHOL.

See, this is why I did not want to get into this.

>> Anonymous
>>25009

Yes, and No.

Alcohol Dehydrogenase oxidizes ethanol to acetaldehyde, yes. However, in a healthy individual, that acetaldehyde is rapidly oxidized again to acetyl-CoA by acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. The acetyl-CoA then feeds into the Krebs cycle, where it is converted to energy carrier coenzymes, hence the caloric value of ethanol.

Some individuals, particularly those of asian descent, have mutations in their alcohol dehydrogenase or acetaldehyde dehydrogenase that can lead to the accumulation of larger than normal concentrations of acetaldehyde. This is responsible for a worse-than-normal hangover in these individuals. In individuals without this mutation, the primary cause of hangover is dehydration, with hypoglycemia second, and acetaldehyde a distant third.

Person who posted the article here again. Sorry guys, I didn't know that this would turn into such a big debate among you all. I didn't know the article was phony. Hopefully I can get someone IRL to explain this to me more.

I don't go on /ic/ and argue with the drawfags about drawing techniques. Life would be a lot easier for me if laypeople would just accept that there are people on the internets who know more than they do.

I'm afraid the the translation of that into basic terms would require large portions of a basic general chemistry course, as well as the first month or so of organic chemistry. While I'm 100% in favor of people learning science, I just don't have the time in my life to teach /fit/ chemistry.

Poster of article here.
Okay, at first I felt kinda bad. But now I don't.

We are ALL laypeople, even you. Everyone is not an expert in everything.

That doesn't mean that I am not going to keep looking for answers and more knowledge. BTW, I don't go to ANY drawing related thing here at 4chan because it is not useful at all.

I don't mind being wrong.

I want to learn more. I don't want to be in the dark about things. I'm glad that you brought up the article inaccuracies, but I really don't like your attitude. It is best to be the master of one trade and then know a bit about everything else.

My health is important to me, so I want to learn as much as I can about it. Even though I have not gone to school to learn health, doesn't mean that I'm not going to try and learn.

I thought I had found an article that supported the point, I guess I was wrong. Oh well...

Lighten up.

I will teach /fit/.

Here is the difference between two alchols:
Primary alcohols = the shit you drink
secondary alcohols = the shit you rub on your body and clean disks with.

Neither is that good for you. The first one is okay in small amounts. The second is not for ingesting.

Class dismissed.

Do you have something against art?

No. No no no no no no no.

A primary alcohol is a molecule with a hydroxyl bound to a primary carbon - that is, an OH group attached carbon bound to only one other carbon. While we do drink one primary alcohol, ethanol, other primary alcohols may or may not be safe for consumption.

Secondary alcohols are alcohols with a hydroxyl group bound to a secondary carbon - an OH attached to a carbon bound to two other carbons. Many biomolecules essential to life are secondary alcohols, but many other secondary alcohols are very dangerous.

TRANSLATION:
Yes, the alcohol we drink is a primary alcohol.

But, if you didn't already know there is more than one type of Primary alcohol. The one you drink is called ethanol.

I REALLY THOUGHT THIS WAS A TROLL WHEN I STARTED READING IT, HURRR I LOST CHOLESTEROL. THEN I REALIZED HE JUST LIFTS WEIGHTS BECAUSE HES LAZY, IT REALLY IS EASIER TO LAY ON A BENCH AND PUSH SOME WEIGHTS UP 10 TIMES THAN IT IS TO RUN 10 MILES, IT REQUIRES LESS TIME/EFFORT (YEA WE CAN ARGUE EFFORT IF YOU REALLY WANT)
