Alcohol and Acne Anonymous
I'm 25. I've always had pretty clear skin until about 2 years ago. Around that same time I moved in with some friends that drink a lot. Naturally, I started drinking way more than I used to. Since then I've been pretty much constantly breaking out. I've tried benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, topical antibiotics, pretty much everything non-prescription under the sun. Nothing works.

I love my booze but I am thinking maybe it has something to do with my acne. Is there any evidence to support this?

tl; dr: ALCOHOL CAUSES ACNE ( Y / N ) ?!

I've read that diet does not affect acne at all. However, I know from personal experience that my skin dries out and breaks at the knuckles and stuff if I don't eat enough fat. Also, if you eat lots of garlic, supposedly your sweat smells like garlic. Sounds to me that what you eat does affect your skin. No idea about alcohol in particular, but I think you should try giving it up

If anything, alcohol would serve to kill bacteria that causes zits, if there were to be any reaction. Perhaps it's something else that comes as a result from drinking.

Maybe you get the urge to smear your face with bacon fat when you're drunk, I don't know. Just stop doing it and wash your face more.

>wash your face more.

Worst fucking advice ever. Yeah, irritate your skin more with bullshit perfumes and shit. That'll make things better.

What the hell do you wash your face with? Warm water and a clean towel does the job just fine.

Warm water and a towel? Sounds more like rinsing than washing to me. But yeah, that's probably enough.

"you are what you eat/drink" is pretty true, although the alcohol probably doesnt have anything to do with your acne, some of the other foods you consume while drunk might. also remember to change your pillow case regularly, some of the nasty shit ends up on pillows.

Whatever you do, don't try to just completely quit drinking. First of all, if drinking is an important part of your social life, you simply will fail to quit. Secondly, moderation is key in all things. So yeah, dont get wasted on Thursday through Saturday. Save the binging for special occasions and just partake in small amounts like a fucking grown-up.

goddamn.

>Wash face with 40% sodium hydroxide to clear your pores, then rinse with cold water.

Uh, really? I never heard of that before so I just looked it up:
"Sodium Hydroxide is extremely caustic, and can react with fats and oils on skin, in a reaction which creates salts. For this reason, sodium hydroxide is very dangerous, and skin should be washed thoroughly with water following contact with this substance."

Doesn't sound like a very good thing to put on your face, at any concentration.

You can alleviate it by application of the 40% sodium hydroxide, then immediate rinse in 30% hydrofluoric acid, then rinse with water. Guaranteed to remove the sebum in your pores.

Goddamn it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrofluoric_acid

"Hydrofluoric acid is corrosive and a contact poison. It should be handled with extreme care, beyond that accorded to other mineral acids, in part because of its low dissociation constant, which allows HF to penetrate tissue more quickly."

Heh, 40% Sodium Hydroxide eh...I work with 50%. Enjoy never being able to see again.

I still have a burn mark on my palm when some splashed under my glove (no idea how that even happened) a month ago.

It's not the booze, it's waking up the next morning in a pool of your own vomit and then not bothering to wash up because you're a filthy animal that's causing them.

Oh god, great advice given in this thread.

erm... my very little knowledge... avoid citrus fruits? as they aggrivate the skin...

ehh...I dunno. Alcohol can be pretty bad for you, but I dont know about causing acne. Maybe you should worry about your liver and guts first, then tend to your skin.

Alcohol doesn't directly cause acne.

However, you may have an allergy to what's in the alcohol which could cause acne. Lay off the booze or change to something else for a few weeks and see what happens.

Also, if you're getting sloshed every night, you're probably not taking good care of your skin. Make sure you clean in the morning.

lol at the HF and NaOH. why not recommend some HNO3 for a color in the skin?
