In before getting burnt for quoting TV shows as a reference, but as someone who's practiced and is interested in martial arts, this helped me.
If you can, go torrent the episodes for TKD and Krav Maga for the series "Human Weapon." Yeah, it's primarily shitty cable entertainment, the guys are annoying, but it'll immediately highlight the differences between the two.
If you want to be in the Israeli Defense Force, or part of an outfit that places a lot of emphasis on being able to fucking -kill- people you fight, no matter where you are, and no matter what you have at hand, using techniques designed to be simple and efficient, fuck yeah, Krav Maga. On the other hand, I doubt you'll have access to a quality school where you can learn it, unless you're in the IDF. Other defense forces have their own combat disciplines, which are based on essentially the same principles though.
TKD is what I did for about 6 years. It made me fit, flexible, I really enjoyed it, and because it wasn't pure TKD, and had some emphasis on self defense in the real world, and other martial arts disciplines (we learned basic grappling technique,) I wouldn't say it's totally useless. But nothing to get over-excited about either, compared to something like Krav Maga. I learned martial arts and real world fighting technique, but it didn't make me a killing machine.
TL;DR: Krav Maga is serious business, TKD isn't.
