I have a question about 5x5 and 3x8 and all of the other ways to go about lifting

If I can do 200 lbs squat doing 3x8, and 200 lbs doing 5x5, what does that mean?
I'm lifting the same weight amirite? Except 8 reps makes the muscles hypertrophy moar and I would look bigger?
And with 5 reps, I have more potential. Liek, with 5 reps in the long-run I will be able to do say 400lb squat, while with 8 reps my max squat will go up to 350lbs.

tl;dr Halp me understand how number of reps works.

If you're doing 5x5 for the same weight as 3x8, you're not using enough weight.
