You should thoroughly stretch before running, and walk briskly to ease into it. The type of pain you're describing is likely due to an uneven, bouncing gait. If you feel your chest doing an up and down motion while you're running, you should slow down and focus on propelling yourself forward, more than up. It sounds obvious but most early runners have trouble with this.
The extremity and duration of the pain is because you weren't properly warmed up, and I'd wager, cooled down.
