I think my dad tried to an hero by way of abusing his diabeetus.

Is this a common occurrence?

I live over 100km from him and got a call from his neighbour telling me he was despondent, showed signs of having fallen on his face, and was too weak to move himself.

Apparently his blood sugar was 60. mmol/L, which seems pretty fucking astronomical... He apparently mentioned not eating in 3 days and just drinking juice.. I haven't gotten a full story yet, but that certainly sounds intentional.

Apparently they are getting his levels back to normal.

60's not that bad. He's a pussy.

60 mmol.L-1?

That's fucking enormous. Reference range is aroun 3-8mmol.

Diabetics tend to suffer mood-swings depending on their blood sugar... some days they're excitable and chirpy, some days they're sullen and down. That might have something to do with a propensity towards an heroing.

Plus he is on a cocktail of anti-depressants and cholesterol stuff.

Not to mention I'm a constant disappointment, and probably inspired this by dropping out of most of my University classes.

The man is 64, so apparently it doesn't look like his kidneys blew up from this abuse, any definite repercussions of having had his mmol.L-1 going that high?

Interesting question. I doubt it, but I don't know enough to give a definitive answer.

Sounds like your dad should be heading to the doctor to discuss his treatment plan and more importantly his feelings. If you're worried about him you might want to try and involve yourself with that, and involve yourself with your dad's life more.

BTW, have you seen the movie Memento?

>but I it pretty low for an adult to do that to their son in spite of them, regardless of how shitty I may be directing my life.

you're a fucking faggot. It's a father's dream to see his son excel and do better than he was.

I had about 60 mmol/L when i was diagnosed, that is some serious shit. He should get his major organs checked out IMO, unless he wants to die.

and there's no definite repercussions it just increases the likelyhood of organ failure.

My mom doesn't do shit about her diabetes. She won't fucking read a book about it or anything. She's gonna fucking die if she doesn't start giving a shit about it.

Just called and when he got in it was at 72. mmol/L, they've been pumping him with insulin since, got down to 60... He's tried ripping out the IV a couple times in confusion or something.

Sounds like he'll be alright eventually even if she doesn't seem to want to guarantee anything.

well it's a tough act to beat, guy played in the cfl and the nfl, and his dad was the head of Canadian imports and exports... and I'm fucking without direction.

same here basically.
he'd stop doing his daily testing, he wouldn't listen to me about how he should drink mostly water instead of fruit juices, soda and energy drinks.

It has someone killing someone with insulin over-dosing.

Anyhoo, you're right, it is shitty. You're still pretty young, so don't fall into the trap of thinking that just because you're Dad is 40 years older than you, he's "worked out" what life is all about. Chances are shit sucks as much when you're 60 as it does when you're 20. It's your call whether you want to help the man or not - it's perfectly acceptable to be heartless and let him an hero.

If you want to help the man...

1) Turn your life around - go to uni, get a good job, get a partner. Improve your self-image. Parents live vicariously through you, so if you're an unsuccessful, ugly slob with no life and no chance of getting laid, it won't help.
2) Show him what's good in your life. If you're not going to uni, fine, maybe it's not for you, but maybe you're doing lots of other cool stuff... maybe you should go out of your way to show him why you don't suck completely.
3) Move closer to him.
4) And be his friend.

Same with my mom. It makes it even worse for my mom because she weighs about 325 lbs. You can try and try to tell them what they should be doing, but they won't always listen, OP. It's kind of selfish though, isn't it?

I do realize he is a flawed individual, as most everyone is. Not sure if Uni is for me, not sure if I want to live my life with my nose in a book, I'm smart enough but definitely not passionate enough about anything at the moment.

I've been improving my self-image lots, to the point where he pulls the line "if you'd pour as much energy into your studies as you do in your training, you could achieve anything..." the school stuff has just gotten to be a drag, but I realize I need to get my shit together and figure out what to do with myself on the double.

I suppose it is selfish to be telling him how to improve upon himself if I've seemingly given up on myself... And that's why I have a suspicion that him completely giving up his will to live is an evil old people tactic to guilt me back into school, since he can't beat good grades into me anymore.

He's a big man as well, 290lbs, 6'7. Probably 6'5 with old man shrinkage.
