Isometrics are great for smaller guys because they produce more of a wirey look then a hueg-muscle look. They're also easier on your joints and give better strength gains when done correctly.
Thing is, what you've described isn't isometics. Sit ups and push ups aren't isometrics.
If you want to do a quick isometric exercise, find something of a medium weight. Enough that lifting it 10 times wouldn't tire you out but you would have to exert yourself a bit.
Now, instead of lifting it, just hold it straight out. And keep holding it straight out until you can't anymore. At first it will feel like nothing. Ten seconds in you should start feel your muscles fatiguing. 20-30 seconds in those muscles should be burning.
