Well let me put it this way. In my opinion 99% of appearence (aside from deformity or genetic disease) is the right amount of effort in the right places. It's hard to look at someone ugly and imagine if they did all they could to be pretty, but look at a really hot girl, now imagine her hair was unkept and frizzy, no makeup, spots, twice the weight and a bad dress sense. Immediately they become unnattractive.
Now i'm not saying everyone has the ability to reach PERFECTION. But you really don't need to. I'm 5'6 with some shitty hereditary Eczeme on my face, and I have a maHOOsive nose. However i look after my body, hair, skin, I dress well and i try to be a confident guy. Now I'm not saying I GET ALL THE GIRLS I GET ALL THE GIRLS, but i've had enough hot girlfriends for me to be very happy with my lot.
Don't think that because you're genetically "ugly" you will ALWAYS remain that. Just make as much effort as you can and try to get some confidence, unless you have some deformities or genetic conditions then anyone can at least reach an acceptable level of attractiveness.
