dips are better than benching if you do them in rapid succession.
do your max dips, rest 30 seconds, do as many as you can, rest 40 seconds, do as many as you can, keep adding 10 seconds and doing dips until you cannot complete one.
It is important, even if you are not fat, to properly warm up your shoulder girdle, elbows and wrists before doing dips.
