Need Sleep Insomniac-ish
Ok, so /b/ didn't help, so this seems to be the next logical place to ask.

I need your help, this is kind of important. I have an exam in switching circuits tomorrow morning, and I need to get to sleep early tonight, like, midnight would be good. Problem is, my sleep schedule is so fucked it's going to be impossible to fall asleep before 2am.
So I come to you guys. I want to know some efficient and safe ways for me to get to sleep tonight. It's currently 10ish pm, you have 2 hours. Don't fail me /fit/!

tl;dr I have an exam in the morning, how does a late sleeper get to sleep quicker.

Pic related, it's what I need right now.

Yeah, I love it. Sleep, sugar, survival. Here's a quote: Going to bed early will affect my social life. But so will having diabetes and cancer. :)

I love the book too. One question that I've always meant to write Formby, is when she says to 'think cave' in setting up your sleeping area, I've always wondered what effect star and moonlight has on melatonin levels. I'd imagine that our paleolithic ancestors slept most of the time outside. Crap, this is now going to bug me for the rest of the week. Oh well, anyways, I better hit the sack.

well i slept in a friend's cottage recently, far away from all the flood lights lining city streets. immediately on night one we all slept much more deeply. there was a tiny window, moonlight and stars we're visible. but indoors they are dim, especially compared to light standards. there's one 6 feet out my window. i hate it. i completely block it every night. another friend bricked up the entire window and used plaster, but i like fresh air also.

but in that book it cites a study, they used a tiny light behind the knee in a completely black room. the person was completely covered in a thick blanket sleeping. when the light was turned on they immediately read melatonin production STOPPED. the light diameter was only of a dime.

so yeah, there you go. i wish i knew more.

I think most people would have always slept "inside", shelter of some sort. Outside is not safe from either the elements or potential predators.

you obviously don't backpack much... sleeping outside without shelter is awesome when it isn't raining... you have a fucking watch and rotate it, not that hard

Have a few shots of vodka. Always works for me.
Make sure you drink a bit of water with it, to avoid feeling any hangover if you're a lightweight, and the fuller bladder will help make you want to get up to use the bathroom in the morning.

Another study failed to replicate that result:

"Nocturnal melatonin secretion is not suppressed by light exposure behind the knee in humans."

Aim to sleep less and less every night, and eventually, you'll fucking turn into Brad Pitt and lead an anti-capitalist revolution.

Moshing for 5 hours seemed to help me.

Seriously though, tire yourself out, have a shower, turn off computer and go to sleep. Reading can help, so can fapping.

Thanks for the tips everyone, although I didn't get to sleep until later than I wanted. So, I woke up with about 4 hours of broken sleep, but my exam went well, so the lack of sleep doesn't matter at this point.

>The experimental night included either: (1) 3-h ocular light exposure (1000 lux, n = 6); (2) 3-h extraocular light exposure behind the knee (13,000 lux, n = 7) or (3) constant dim light exposure (10-20 lux, n = 3). Melatonin suppression occurred with ocular light but not with extraocular light or constant dim light.

Interesting, (2) and (3) seems to account for the starlight and moonlight problem. And also, at least three of the related links on the side support that only moderate to bright light suppresses melatonin levels.
