Good evening dear /fit/

I have a question about push ups.

What is the recommended amount of push ups to do in a day? In how many sets?

I currently do 200 (50*4) a day.

Also, are one hand push ups worth it?

What are the suggested means to increasing the amount of pushups one can do?

Do as many as you can till exhaustion, do diamonds, wide, inward palm, whatever variants work.

If 50 doesn't get your arms tired, you're doing push-ups for cardio, not for building. Less sets, more reps.

WHY ARE YOU DOING PUSHUPS? IF YOU CAN DO A SET OF 50 YOU HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH ENDURANCE, YOU NEED TO SWITCH TO A BENCH IN ORDER TO INCREASE RESISTANCE.

I can't really do benches, since I don't have access to a club or a bench because I travel too much.

I'm doing push ups for everything really. My failure point is ~90-110, my friend suggested trying to change my routine to 2*80, would that be wise?

No, you need to do more difficult versions of pushups, like inclined pushups, 1 handed pushups, or vertical pushups (handstand pushups).

Honestly, if you can do more than 15 of a single type, you need to move up to the next level. I rate them in difficulty like this:

Woman Pushups
Bowed Pushups (you arch your back and only go half way)
Regulation Pushups (back stays straight, nose touches the floor)
Inclined Pushups (We will call regulation pushups -10%, inclined pushups go from 0%s [flat] to right before vertical pushups [using a wall to incline your legs].
1 Handed Pushups (can be regular all the way to inclined)
Vertical Pushups
1 Handed Vertical Pushups (if you can do these... congratulations, now move on to weights)

Re continue

I also heard of a suggestion in packing weighs in a backpack and doing pushups then, is that worth it?

Ah I see, thanks for the info, One more question tho, are 15 a set really enough?

This is just a rough estimate, if you can't do the next benchmark, then go back and do more of the previous for longer periods of time. For bench press (which btw, is what a push-up is emulating) most weight lifters say 3x10 is the right amount of sets/reps, at least for gaining muscle mass. So 3x15 is over the amount, meaning you will be more tone, but will waste a considerable amount of extra time in the long run.

Its up to you, you can do 3x10 as well, as long as you are pushing yourself as hard as you can for those 10 reps per set.

Yes, because if you can do 20+ then you don't have enough resistance and you'll stop gaining anything.

20*20, bitch

Not OP here, whenever I try push-ups my hands always start hurting, like I'm crushing the bones in them with my body. What am I doing wrong? Should I not bother and do something else?

If you can tolerate the pain, then do them, if not, step down to one of the lesser weighted push ups like the dude said earlier. All you have to do is 30 of them total, in sets of 3. Move up at your own pace.

God damn, I want to be able to do those now. Thats one hell of a way to show off at a gym.

At this point, it's probably worth it to add some resistance to your routine. Get a weighted vest and put a small amount of weight in it. Start with 5 pounds and work your way up to 100 pushups, then increase the weight.

Also, elevating your feet will increase the resistance if you can't afford a vest. Raise them by a foot or so, and you'll feel quite a difference.

>not a back exercise.
Sure it is, it's just not a very effective one. People who are most sedentary will find it difficult to keep a straight back at first. Also, those 90 degree "press ups" in that video would take a phenomenal amount of back strength in order to keep your body rigid.

here is an advice that had me pump them out with ease, negatives, three times a week. Two days of same number, one day with a bit more (medium medium high routine) What number to do is individual, but go about measuring it up like you would the rep sets for normal weight exercises.
