hey /fit/ i am a fat ass ( 5'11, 259 ) and I have been walking lately. I heard that running causes a problem for your knees but what about walking? I walk for at least 1 hour and 30 minutes a day.

Also, it's usually not my knees, it's my ankles. Should I stop?

If it gives you too much strain on the knees and ankles, you should stop walking for so long.

You should also start trying to flex your body a bit with a few simple stretches, then extend it to a 15-30 minute warm up/down routine in addition to your walks.

I don't understand why people start with walking/running. Riding a bike is so much better for your knees and ankles, if the saddle has the right height.
STart on a bike, if you've lost enough weight you can switch to running, but it's a little too soon now.

OP here again, would an exercise bike work?

no you dont get the fresh air and it doesnt work your arms as much , plus you are more likely to get bored of an exercise bike you can go exploring with a bike

OP Here:
bump. I just got in the shower and my knees are fucking red, but I feel no pain. Damn this fat. I wish I could just do this with no physical consequences.

That could very well be edema, which will add fluid to that area to dilute the infection, and supply nutrients to the area. I would get that looked at as it could be something not weight related or possibly severe.

Just make sure you ease into your program. If you're looking for a quick fix you can try bust through it, but it will be incredibly difficult. If you're willing to take a more sustained route, the general rule is to exercise whenever you're not sore from your last workout. If you're still sore from your last workout, you need to either do exercises which don't use that part of your body, or rest. This means if your ankles hurt, you should let them rest before you do any more long walking. In the meantime do other exercises that get you off your feet: dumbell exercises, pushups (knees if you need it), crunches etc.

Losing fat is about maintaining an elevated heart rate for a long period of time. You can do this just as well with upper body work like I suggested above (LIGHT weight, this is mostly cardio) as you can with the usually walking/jogging/running. Work just hard enough to make yourself sweat, and do it for as long as you can. Take short breaks (1 minute max) when you need a rest and keep going. If you develop joint pain when doing any of these you should stop and rest until the pain is gone. Remember, I'm not advocating pure muscle building here, you'll probably hold off on that until you've lost some weight. If you use weights, keep the weight low and reps very high.
