Gyms are very intimidating.

Any tips for someone new going to a gym? Will people be willing to help me out with the machines? Anyways to not look like an idiot?

Cheers

Ask trainer for help.
Get friendly with people.
Find workout buddy or buddies.
Profit.

Depends on the people. Should always have a good spotter. Don't try anything crazy on your first time (like decline bench press with way too much weight). Machines don't quite need help, they're meant to be self-spotting and sometimes have instructions on them.

When i first went to my gym i got a free induction from the trainers where the showed me what to do on every machine and told me about them etc..

If you get a membership that will probably happen.

True idiots at a gym are the ones that just stand around looking at others not knowing what to do thus showing hesitance.

Whatever you do don't be afraid to try things and learn things and don't think about what others will think of you.

Know in advance what you will do. This means researching. That is part of getting fit. You will now know all the muscle groups and the exercises to hit them. In your newfound newbie enlightenment, just don't rush around telling others how to lift right.

Also, start small. Doing a 95 lbs bench for 8 safe reps is much less embarassing than being buried under a 135 lbs bench after 7 shaky reps and causing everyone to rush to save your feeble ass.

Oh, and this is only a personal favor: don't grunt or flash poses into the mirror until you have something to merit the activity.

Addendum: the only thing you should care about relating to other people is how much you're pissing them off. Don't sit on a bench on your phone or anything stupid and nobody will give a damn about you.

>don't grunt

Thats why i love working out with my home setup, frankly it feels natural to grunt when your exerting yourself, and im usually panting pretty hard after a tough set, thankgod i dont have to give a damn about what someone else thinks of me. Id rather focus on the exercise than split my focus between working out and trying not to 'embarrass' myself.

I mean dramatic shit, like a hyenna grunt Yang-style or screaming. It loses its drama when you stomp angrily over to a 135 lbs deadlift.

get a trainer for a few weeks dude, its harder than it seems to lift correctly. This way you dont have to worry about injury and looking like a fool... speaking from experience

It's not as bad as you think.

Get a plan with simple exercises from bodybuilding.com. If there are exercises you do not know, simply search them via google. Most of them will have YouTube vids anyway.

It's all in your head. Noone there is going to care about you.

just don't clang the weights or do curls with your back, otherwise most people won't give you a second look. Unless you are a hot women then your every move will be watched.

but do youtube searches for better idea.

trainer would be ideal, but that is expensive. O_o

Machines are bullshit.

Also, sometimes I will look at a guy for a little too long if he's performing really well, usually ends in a conversation and a spotting buddy so don't be afraid to talk there unless they look busy.

I usually grunt (not super loudly) when doing a heavy weight... it psyches me up.

Truth is, nobody gives a shit about your existance in their. Everyone is busy checking themselves out in the mirror or actually working out.

Also trainers should be around to give you some help with shit if you need it.
