How do I know if I am an alcoholic?

It feels like I am going round in circles. I don't actually drink that much - between 1-3 times a week, and usually the equvilent to about 8 pints at a time. I rarely drink in the morning, its usually after 2pm. I drink alone once a week or so, but more times its when I'm down the pub. I have trouble stopping once I've had that first drink. I do get bad cravings, right now I feel like I need a drink. Most of the time I can ignore the craving, but I'm struggling to go any more than 3 days without a drink. In the past, I have managed 14 weeks with a drink.

How can I tell if I need to stop?

I just realized I was an alcoholic this weekend when I drank enough alcohol to black out and hit my head on the floor. And I was vomiting stomach purge (coffee grounds looking shit). So yeah, there are two ways to be an alcoholic -- to drink all day and frequently, or to binge drink all at once and not know when to stop (that's me apparently)

Heheh. All my friends are alcoholic by your definition. Including me.

That is the definition of an alcoholic, though. Normal people don't drink alcohol until they black out/pass out in a pool of vomit.

I suppose if you do it every time you drink.

If you don't have control over how much you drink that's still alcoholism. Unless you are purposely trying to black out when you drink, which most people aren't. It's a lack of self-control.

Binge drinking is still alcoholism

Or lack of proper experience with various types of alcohol.
I've had many heavy-drinking nights where I felt like I'd only drank 2/3'ds of my limit, but it was new drinks/types of alcohol and I ended up going well over my limit and vomiting like a madman.

I'm no alcoholic by any means. Gimme drinks Im familiar with, and i'll get drunk/out-drink many people, but never vomit/pass out.

blacking out/vomiting doesn't really have anything to do with being an alcoholic. fuck all the stupid tests of alcoholism, here is what one is:

on some level you want to stop drinking, but you can't.

or

alcohol is a major part of your life.

anything else is fine, people need to stop being pussies. sure alcohol kills you, so does a lot of other shit, and if you want to be fit don't drink very often, but if not, then who the fuck cares people have been drinking and dying since the beginning of the humans, nothing new.

I'd prefer to call it a night to celebrate my achievement. One night of fun isnt going to affect me much since the next day i'll be going down to see my local army recruiter.

Oh right. I dont know, i never seem to pace myself. If i see a bottle of aftershock i smile and start downing the shots. Beer is different, i used to go through at least 12-14 stella and was never "totally wasted". Probably because i was 280lb, i figure once im down to about 190lb (5'11), it will take alot less to get wasted.

Here in Britfag land (our drink/driving limit is half of the US's) 'they' say that binge drinking is defined as drinking over 3 units (about 2 drinks) so yes, everybody's an alcoholic!
