picking the right martial art Anonymous
does anyone know of anything that can help recommend what kind of martial art one is suited for? I mean, I've done a lot of research but I want to narrow it down some more.

go on youtube and see some demonstrations and sparring. but if you've already done that, the only thing I can really think of is probably going to the places where you wanted to study and see how you feel about it.
>> exroyalty !3GqYIJ3Obs
btw op, what styles are you considering?
>> Anonymous
yeah I've done that already, was thinking about checking out the places too.

anyway, I'm considering

shotokan karate and sanshou (chinese kickboxing)

I'm looking for other things that are strikes/kicks/throws/grapples etc. Jeet kun do is too fast for me from what I've seen.

btw, I'm 5'10 and 180lbs

do you want to learn for self defense, or exercise , or to do flashy stuff.
BJJ seems pretty good from what I seen.

From what I'm hearing here, go with shooto, you can throw in some Muay Thai or something (or heck pretty much whatever you want) if you feel like it, most clubs even have this from the get-go.

It's a very good martial art too, you can fight in any position (even when you're on your back) and has it all (kicks, punches, grapples e.t.c.)

It's basically a collection of "Everything-that-works".

go with hapkido its kind of a combination of taekwando(flashy aerobic kicks) and judo(practical grappling, no strikes) more focused around self defense

I was considering hapkido, but I really want something that has striking before.

Originally, bajiquan is something that appealed to me a lot (because I think it would be suited very well with my weight, etc) but I can't find anything that's like that either.

There's no reason to limit yourself. Some arts have better focus in different areas. If you want to grapple, then learn judo. If you want to learn to throw a punch, learn boxing. If you want to neutralize your opponent (instead of crushing them) then learn aikido. As long as you're doing something, you'll start to improve. There's no single way that is superior to all others.

What's your ultimate goal?

There is no dank. There is only diggity dank.

I'd think my goals would be mainly fitness (exercise and keeping healthy) and to learn to defend myself. I want something that has variability (punches, kicks, throws etc) because life is unpredictable.

Do Judo, it was created by a guy who kept getting picked on by bullies

OP wants something that's more than just throws though.

I recommend kickboxing

Find any decent place near you. Style really doesn't matter that much, it's a good teacher. Find places near you and see if they offer a free class or something and try it out. Make sure the teacher is good.

Gun-fu is the only viable fighting style.

Wasn't there a thread exactly the same as this like 2 days ago? And by exactly the same I mean, word for word.

I smell copypasta.

Jujitsu is probably one of the best styles for self defense. Not Brazilian either, Budoshin. A lot of stand up fighting for practical situations. Also Muay Thai is good.

that sounded too good to be true. I checked http://www.martialbase.com/ and couldn't find a school nearby for it :{
