A friend of mine moved away and left me his bike. I plan to use it for exercise, but I have some questions about adjusting it. (It's been a long time since I used a bike.)

I know that the seat height should allow for my leg to be fully extended for the down-pedal, but how high should the handlebars be?

Also, gears? How do these work? There is a 1, 2, 3 on the left handlebar, and 1-7 on the right.

From what I was told form the shop I bought my bike, your leg shouldn't be fully extended, but almost. This prevents knee injuries.
