You do a lot more in track than just running and most of your preparation for meets involves weight training, though to different extents based on what event you compete in. Someone who does shot put obviously needs a lot of raw strength.
I'm just saying this based on my track experience, though not as a female obviously, females did do similar weight training to males in the same event competitions. In any case, I did pole vault, discus, and the 400 meter, and my coaches always made me do lifting.
