hello, /fit/. i have a question.
i'm pretty much a major insomniac, and i can't get to sleep until 4 or 5 in the morning, usually. i end up cleaning and working out and making lists and i just am overly productive at night. i was thinking about taking a benadryl or nyquil every night to go to sleep for a few months.
the main thing i want to ask here is,
if i take nyquil every night for a long period of time to help me go to sleep, what will be the health consequences? i know abusing a sleeping pill/sleeping medicine isn't good, but nyquil is a pretty heavy duty cold medicine and it's the only thing that will knock me out. i haven't done barely any research and decided to ask you guys what you thought.

sounds like you're trying to avoid the daytime, try some ambien. get in bed and stay there, no caffeine or stimulants and work out hard during the day. If you can go to sleep at 4 you can go to sleep at 12 or 10 for that matter. mind over matter and all that.

yeah, i'm gonna try that starting tomorrow
since it's already 3 am here. lol
when my classes start back up i'm going to definitely have to go to sleep early and i'm kind of panicking
so i'm trying to train myself to go to bed at eleven or twelve, which is near impossible for me.
but i'm gonna try it anyways and see how it works out.

>Try this - Completely avoid sleeping for a day. Stay up all night, past 5:00 when you usually sleep, keep going, keep going, stay awake, until it gets to be 11:00 or whatever time you want to start going to bed! Crash!

I'm like you OP, and I do this all time. Only problem is that I have like no energy while I'm doing it and for the 2 or 3 days following. Not a problem if I know I'm gonna be sitting on my ass or just working, but it leaves me with little motivation to exercise or go out and do shit. Coffee helps though, get up on that

Oh yes it is, 500mg of Diphenhydramine (Nytol, check the packet) will get you tripping. Most sleeping pills are fine if you keep them on short term use i.e. around a month then switch to a different chemical.

>>since it's already 3 am here. lol

Yet you are sitting on a computer, obviously you wont be sleeping.

I'm suffering from insomnia, doesn't matter what time i go to bed or what i do beforehand i cannot sleep until nearly 5am every night, then i'm up at around 6-8am. Go to the doctor and get benzos, over the counter stuff is weak ass shit unless you OD on it.

i used to have this problem as well in college when I lived with roommates for the first time.

these assholes would stay up all night listening to music and getting high, and keeping me up. it got to the point where as soon as i went to bed i'd get panicky because i knew that sooner or later the music and partying would start up. i'd immediately feel wide awake and wouldn't be able to sleep for hours.

anyways, my suggestion is to stay away from tvs and computers if you can't sleep. these provide quite a bit of stimulation. try reading a book instead

hey look, it's 5:23 in the morning. How ironic that I find this thread

youre not an insomniac. im an insomniac. i go up to a week without sleep at a time. you are just a night owl. my advice for you would be to get a swing/graveyard shift job and start hanging out in all night clubs. that way you can stay up, be productive, meet people and not feel like a chode.

Just guessing here but try doing something more relaxing before you go to bed. I used to play games/surf the internet before I tried to sleep. Never really worked - your mind's too active.

Reading or listening to calming music is a lot better.

I plan on realistically falling asleep at 2pm and doing a massive 12 hour hibernation until tomorrow morning. will it just be hurting me if I go running in the meantime before the premier league starts?

Go read about the circadian rhythm and how our sleep cycles work. Read about melatonin. Don't forget those words.

Are anti-histamin's not what the doctor recommended? They use them in the hospital but I dunno

woo, you all sound like me!

i used to be a pretty srs insomniac, for about 5 years.

the way i solved it was:
no cigarettes two hours before bed
no artificial light in my bedroom in the dark (computer power light, monitor standby light, etc)
getting away from the computer and actually going to bed instead of browsing 4chan so long
no large meals right before bed
sleeping with the window open - better oxygen circulation
making a to-do list for the following day before bed (worrying about shit used to keep me awake too)
not smoking joint after joint after joint before bed

also
a nip of whisky just before you climb under the blankets will knock you right out. good whisky.

OTC stuff is commonly Diphenhydramine from what i've looked into on 420chan. It's abused to hell because its a delerient and causes hallucinations. When you go to the doctors, if its for fairly short-term use i.e. 1-3 weeks then you will get benzos. They will be insisting on trying to find the cause of the problem but make sure you tell them you cannot sleep or focus on work and can barely make it through the day.

>sleeping with the window open - better oxygen circulation
I think that it's the cooler temperature that does more than just the oxygen circulation. Our bodies are designed to react to the cooling of the night. It tells our bodies to go to sleep.

i used to take tylonal pm almost every night to go to sleep. you become pretty dependent on it to get to sleep. knowing little to nothing of health id suggest trying to find a natural solution or just go to the doctor.
