Cigarettes. How bad are they REALLY for you when you exercise? I am currently losing weight and it's going very good so far, but i smoke 3-4 cigarettes a day. What effect does it really have on my training?

I don't really notice a difference unless I chain-smoke the day before I work out.

Uh...

If it's not already giving you any problems you're probably not going to notice much unless, as Asshole mentioned, you chain-smoke the day before.

3-4 cigarettes isn't very much for your typical smoker. You're fine. Just keep on truckin'.

Think of your lungs as balloons. You can blow them up and get so much air into them. Now fill them halfway up with water. Now you can get much less air into them.

Cancer aside, that is what is happening to your lungs with every cig you smoke. True, the effect isn't significant on a per cig basis, but it adds up. With every one you smoke, you're losing out on another few grams of your VO2 max (methinks that's what it's called).

less V02 max= less oxygen in blood = less energy used = less performance = enjoy cancer and being fat

Thank you for completing my thought :)

Thanks for the input. I think the major reason i don't quit is that i heard that the nicotine increases your metabolism, and quitting would damage my weight loss more than if idon't.

Only temporarily until your body readjusts. Seriously, aside from addiction and inability to deal with withdrawal, there is no health reason to not quit.
