Hopefully theres a helpful anon or two out there. I'm male, 5 foot 8 and weigh 14 stone (196 pounds or so). Any idea what kind of weight loss to expect on 1500 calories a day (formerly about 2500)?

Sorry, there's no simple answer. It would depend on your metabolism, what you eat, and the amount you exercise. The best answer I can give is "you will probably lose weight at a slow, but steady amount".

1500 is way too little. 1800 at least, man.

His BMR is approx 2000 calories a day, assuming we dont include variant factors like metabolism and he burned around 300-400 through exercise a day in combination with eating 1500 calories through a balanced diet, he would be losing on average 2lb a week. But everyone is different, so it could be more, could be less.

You're supposed to make a deficit in calories after you find your BMR and add the Harris Benedict thing (aka your activity level) to it. This misconception has been floating around in /fit/ for as long as it opened... I remember I was eating like 1100 calories because I was told to subtract 500 calories from the amount I got from a BMR calculator.

the Basal Metabolic Rate is the base energy one needs in order to breathe/exist, right?
so
BMR+Activity Level=calories needed to maintain weight
where
Activity Level=ranges from sedentary to active

It all comes down to your body build with the Harris Benedict formulae. Its just a rule of thumb (imo), i never took it into the equation when i was creating defecits and i have been doing great over the past 5 1/2 months. Doctors recommend lowest is 1200 for women, 1800 for men but remember these are guidelines. They are like the recommended dose, everyone has different tolerance levels (i regularly OD'd on pills because i had a much larger frame at the start of this year), it gets them out of any legal issues if someone on a very small frame managed to overdose. My point being that every body is different and there are those who can go below what is recommended and still get the same results.
