BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES Anonymous
Are bodyweight exercises any good for building strength, keeping (and maybe adding) muscle, and losing fat? I'm talking squats with no weights, pushups, crunches, dips, calf raises, burpees, etc.

I'm thinking of starting a bodyweight exercise regimen. Picture unrelated.

Body weight exercises are very good but you need to refresh and alter them now and then so you don't plateau.

Push-ups, for example, may be a good start for a beginner, who can do 10-20 no problem. As you get stronger, you can can get up to 50+, and that's not really going to make you any stronger. So instead, try doing knuckle push ups, push ups with your hands very close together, and the almighty one-handed push-ups.

The same applies to many other body-weight exercises. In order to get stronger without topping out, you have to look up variations or make some up on your own.

Is it possible to actually build muscle only using your bodyweight?

Yes.

I've forgotten which fighter it was but a UFC champ said in an interview that he had never touched a weight set in his life, it was all body work and general fitness.

Absolutely.
Outside my gym there's a designated bodyweight area, it's got a shit ton of different bars and platforms and whatever else. I never see anyone using it, and I'm afraid to try it out, but it looks cool as hell if I knew what to do on the bars.

Chin ups.

Um . . .yeah one of them is a chin up bar, but there are some slanted bars, and some vertical bars with little flat platforms at the top. Some other stuff too, actually I might go try it out this afternoon, it's a really nice day outside, I just don't want everyone driving by going "what the hell is that guy doing? He looks like a retarded monkay"

The people that think/say that aren't even human beings. Get on those bars and go crazy nigger!!!

They have little diagrams by them like the weight machines in the gym do to show you how they work.

THANKS FOR THE CONFIDENCE!

Maybe I'll post about it tomorrow if I feel like it.

how can you expect to gain muscle and lose weight, using only body weight exercises, isn't that counter-intuitive? if you're losing weight you weigh less making your body weight exercises even less effective
>> Anonymous
"One of my student’s, JJ Gregory, far exceeded my own modest accomplishments. On his first day of high school weight lifting, JJ pulled a nearly triple bodyweight deadlift with 400 pounds at a bodyweight of 135 and about 5’3" in height."

O LAWD.

Yeah people laugh when you say gymnastics that is, until you out bench them OLOLOLO bodybuilders.
>> Anonymous
You dont need weights to build muscle. one legged squats, chins/one armed chins, planche press ups, dragon flags. these are bodyweight exercises most people cant do, even dedicated weight lifters.
>> Anonymous
>>97845
lets see you out bench some body builders then.

This is helpful. Gymnastics coach gives lots of tips. His article on planche is really good.

Easiest way for a Handstand pressup. His site contains good tutorials of most basic bodyweight exercises as well.

It is completely possible, just think of it this way. You are doing assisted push ups at a weight of 240lbs, netting maybe 100lbs of actual effort. You do other similar exercises at a good pace keeping the heart rate high. You then increase the difficulty of the workout by adding inclines to sit-ups, doing diamond and one handed push-ups, so on and so forth. I've seen it work and convinced myself to maintain in the same manner.

I'm not OP, but I want to increase my pushup numbers. Are there faster ways to build up my numbers, other than just doing more pushups?

If you're looking for endurance, that mostly only comes with time. Just keep pushing your limits.
>> Anonymous
>>97871
I heard if I keep doing pushups till failure, I'll build up endurance. Is this true?
>> Anonymous
>>97873
Yes, like riding a bike or doing anything else that requires physical effort, you should be able to keep training to the point where you can do them nonstop.
>> Anonymous
>>97876
That's a good example. Thanks!!
>> Anonymous
>>97873

Hey thread hijacker, you have it all wrong. Do them two to three reps before failure and then do them every hour or two. Don't go to fucking failure, you fucking failures.
>> Anonymous
>>97884
Contra...dicting...responses...brain overload.
I guess I'll do pushups before I reach failure.

I want to mix up some bodyweight exercises with my current cardio regimen. But how can one start doing bodyweight exercises if you're almost 300 lbs? I can't even do one pushup lol whut.
