I am 5' 10" and 150 pounds. Totally out of shape with no muscle mass, toothpick arms, pencil neck, etc. But I can grab a bunch of flab on my stomach and ass. I'm out of shape. I do squats, dead lifts, military presses 3x a week. I eat fairly well, 4 meals a day of chicken, beans, rice, broccoli, protein shakes, eggs, etc.

Sometimes I like to drink. My roommate is a hot Asian chick who sometimes wants to have mixed drinks or a few glasses of wine with me about once a week. Also sometimes if I am stressed out after work I'll grab a 6-pack to drink after work. that happens about once or twice a week.

I know that this drinking is bad for me, it will make me fatter and eat away at muscle mass.

So what does /fit/ recommend as far as semi healthy drinking habits go? How much and how often can one realistically drink without seriously undermining their efforts to better themselves?

If you're going to be going out partying or to the bar, drink only one to two drinks an hour. Seriously, alcohol is the worst thing in the world for you if you're trying to get in shape. It makes you fat and weak. And it lightens your wallet. I guess drinking 1-2 (wine or liquor) a day is good for your heart, but binge drinking (ie more than 1-2 an hour) IS NOT.

Beer has 2 things against it, empty carbs and alcohol. Both of these will fatten you. Liquor and wine both have higher alcohol content, so it's easier to overdrink. They barely have any carbs in them, so I'll say go with that if you must. Having a glass of wine everyday is actually good for your heart.

Mixed drinks depend on what the mixer is. Juice and soda is bad, too much sugar. I can't really think of any other mixers off the top of my head, but what I drink is scotch/whisky/bourbon with a splash of water. Take a lowball glass, mix it with a shot and fill the rest with water. Delicious.

Lol I'm a high society, balling ass motherfucker, motherfucker. Actually, scotch is more of a hobby for me. I thoroughly enjoy it, kind of like some people enjoy listening to classical music or having new kinds of sex.
