What do I do about sunburns? I have one now. I want to do everything within my power to help my skin recover successfully.

I just avoid the sun. Like a faggy goth kid, but with a justifiable reason. I burn within minutes, and I've had some really, really bad ones. It's to the point that now, I unconsciously associate the feeling of direct sun on my skin as "bad" and thus stay the fuck in the shade. Where I've got it made. It's been years since I've had a burn.

Whatever your case is, it's still a burn and there's not much you can do for burns. Soothe it with unscented lotion or AL gel as mentioned earlier.

Lifeguard here,

Aloe Vera is generally used as a relief for the pain of the sunburn, but personally i'm allergic to it so i shun it like the devil (which, being allergic to it also makes me unable to use half of the sunblock lotions today that include AV in them).

Other than that, just stay out of the sun until your skin heals. Should last from a couple days to a week. And unless you're out under the sun every day for summers and summers on end getting burned constantly, you shouldn't have to worry too much about skin cancer. Unless you're sitting in front of a computer monitor that gives off UV rays for hours and hours on end a day, 7 days a week. THEN you could be in trouble ;)

Ah good to hear. It was a silly mistake on my part to not have sunblock.

Oy, things happen. You could be the most prepared person in the world like>>261717, but then when you go over to a friend's for a day and end up without your sunscreen, i wouldn't say it let stop you from having a good time, even if it means taking a little burn.

In this day and age, people tend to forget that while alot of our ancestors probably did die of things like skin cancer (poor pirates!), alot of them lived and worked out in the sun every day of their lives with no SPF whatsoever.

Also on the bright side, it's been a noted thing among our lifeguards this year that after you burn, your skin adapts slowly to be a bit harder to burn the next time (after it's recovered). We still don't want to burn until we're immune to the sun though, the surgery (and sometimes resulting scars) from cancer are no fun :<

that's... pretty much how melanin works. welcome to: the reason black people don't get sunburns, and also the reason black people come from africa.

And the reason Lifeguards like me, who's "undersides" (palms, bottom sides of arms, etc) are still white can stand outside of tanning salons, look at their arms and body and scream like recovering from an oven :D

p.s. i've seen a black person sunburned. No it wasn't pretty. They, like me, were also allergic to Aloe, and i couldn't really offer any other advice to them :(
