Hey /fit/,

throughout my teenage years I would sometimes wake up in the night with horrible, horrible leg cramps- seriously the most painful thing I'd ever experienced. Afterwards my leg would feel stiff and hurt for days.

And now, it's starting up again. I'm waking up in the middle of the night, thrashing violently, squeezing the hell out of my pillow, crying, etc.

Is there anything I can do to stop this shit?

I get charlie horse cramps during the night too OP, you're not alone. After years of suffering, I finally figured out the best thing to do (if the cramp is in ur calf) is to just straighten out ur leg and flex ur foot right as you feel the cramp coming on- works every time.

Do you drink milk? Far too often people forget about calcium and the role it plays as an ion in muscle contraction. You need to take a supplement if you don't have room for extra calories from dairy in your diet. I hope that will help yah. Also, try other minerals as suggested.

It sounds like a charlie horse. I suffered from these for years too. Nothing like waking up your house in the middle of the night screaming in pain, huh?

For me, I learned that it was a circulation issue. The circulation was being cut off to my legs in my sleep, and without blood the veins and muscles began to swell.

Losing weight can definitely help. That was one of the primary reasons I started my weight loss. Also, if you wear really heavy shoes (like, construction boots or hiking shoes), stop wearing them and buy some light sneakers instead.
