I'm a fat girl who wants to go work out but it's too embarrassed to. I feel self-conscious in my outfit and out of place at the [very] crowded gym.

Anyone else dealing with feelings of insecurities at the gym? How do you beat them or get around them?

Picture not really related.

Just go and work out. Most everybody else will be too busy doing their own thing to notice you. Some might even silently respect you for exercising.

man up. the gym isn't a place where people hang out to put you down. concentrate on your own gains and completely ignore everyone else. just block it out. listening to music helps because you don't pretend you heard something about you.
btw if your fat, starting off with swimming would be the best for your joints. and i would suggest searching online for alot of "at home" workouts if you're embarrassed about working out at the gym. there's plenty you can do that will give you the burn that you want

You have 3 options:
Work on your self consciousness, either by convincing yourself not to care about what others think, or by keeping your goal in mind to help stave off the insecurity.

Work out at home instead of at the gym.

Find a time to go when there aren't too many others around, and bring a workout buddy.

Go.

I dealt with the same insecurities when I started going to the gym. That people would stare, say I didn't belong, that I wouldn't know how to use the equipment.

Guess what. One day I just got in my car and went. And now I look forward to going.

It's the best way to get over your fear. Just face it. It won't be as bad as you think.

seriously

just fucking ignore everyone like they don't even exist

the only thing that matters are the lights and numbers in front of you

Honestly, the only time I don't criticize fat people is when they're at the gym. It's the one place they DO belong.

OP please don't feel embarrassed. Personally, when i see a larger person at the gym my thoughts about them are, "Good for them! Its great that they decided to make a difference in their life. Way to go, just keep at it and you'll achieve your goals!"

I've tried working out at home... I was actually working out at home 4 days a week for awhile. But I wasn't doing a lot of intensive cardio work and thus not losing weight and I got discouraged. I just want to go and run on the treadmill for like an hour.

I'm actually planning on going to the campus gym in a bit. Its a Friday night. I guess I'll have to tough it out like you guys say.

When I see a fat person at the gym who is really genuinely trying to lose weight and get healthy, I think to myself.. good job dude. If a see a fat person at the gym who is half-assing everything and not wanting to become healthy, only going to the gym so that they can tell their doctor they did.. i think to myself.. what a piece of shit.

when I see a fatso at the gym I usually like to get close to them and shout "WAILMER, I CHOOSE YOU!" And then I instantly fuck like ten hot chicks in front of them and then ride off on my hoverboard.

Do you want to know the great thing about being a fat person at the gym?

In 6 months to a year, you will be a HEALTHY person in the gym and nobody will think or know you were fat.

Also they have women-centric gyms if you don't want weird dudes being fags around you. And community colleges have exercise programs for older/fatter people who will be sympathetic!

You can do it.

@ OP

The only advice I have is to wear dark colored clothing and just suck it up and go.

I was very skinny when I started at the gym, but now that I'm filling out a bit I don't feel as insecure. You just have to deal with it until you start to get where you want to be.

my best advice , GET OVER IT! you wana get in shape ? it takes guts, so swallow your fear and walk in there!

Thanks for the advice. Thanks to everyone who replied; except to the two losers who thought they could somehow make me feel bad by insulting me through 4chan.

if you are fat, jogging might be bad for you. You could wreck your knees.

You could always go running outside at night if you're self conscious.

Home gym. I don't have to give three fucks about how stupid I look. If you hit a used sports equipment store you can pick up an elipitical or some other cardio machine on the cheap.

step 1: stop caring what other people think
step 2: motivate yourself for the sake of yourself
step 3: work out
step 4: ???
step 5: profit.

How fat are we talking, here? Even a fat chick doesn't look too repulsive in regular black workout pants and a tshirt. You can't go wrong with that.

Don't worry about it, just go and do your thing..

Simple, loose black clothing to run it. And go at peak hours - the busier it is the less selfconcious you feel. Plus at 3/4 all the girls are watching their talk shows and don't care about anyone else.
