So after several months of working out at home, I went to the gym today to do some proper squats and stuff.

I learned several things and was shocked by several things.

1)Front Squats are the motherfucking shit. I squatted 165 at 150# bodyweight.

2)Presses are way funner than One Arm Dumbbell Presses.

3) Did I mention front squats are the shit?

4) WHY THE FUCK IS EVERYONE, I MEAN LITERALLY EVERYONE, IN THE FUCKING DUMBBELL ROOM CURLING. THERE WERE 11 PEOPLE IN THERE, ALL DOING VARIOUS KINDS OF CURLS. WHAT THE FUCK?

5) Once I get a decent base of strength, I am so getting into fucking Oly Lifting.

Lol the funniest thing was these two 100 pound chinese guys curling 10s.

People at my gym use the dumbells for presses and dumbell benches, lrn2 not go to faggot gyms.

VARIOUS CURLZ

Speaking of asians, this tuesday i saw 7 korean guys come out of nowhere to the dumbbell rack and start curling away. I swear to god their arms were bigger than their legs. Lol, and whats more they even synchronized their lifting and rest periods all together
>> Anonymous
there were 11 people doing curls in your gym?? How could there possibly be enough curls racks to accommodate everybody?

YOU WANT PIZZA SON OF BITCH?

>>409055
seriously, why bothering developing your biceps?

it's not like you ever use them

silly
>> Anonymous
>>409072
I'm guessing the gym has at least 11 sets of dumbbells, assuming they weren't all trying to use the same weight and all use a preacher bench or something.
>> Anonymous
>>409072
ooh, that was a low blow.
>> Anonymous
>>409077

Working your biceps is completely functional. You carry shit in your arms perhaps, such as groceries or mulch? Thought so. Me? I carry bitches to mah room

Zercher squats, good morning, and carrys and shit man. It's like have big brakes on a geo, it just don't make no sense brah.
>> Anonymous
i actually did see a guy with waaaaaay bigger arms than legs at the gym the other day. He was doin CURLZ with well over 100lbs (on a barbell) but his calves were teeny weeny. He looked at ME funny while I was doing SQUATZ
>> gay
you care too much about other people at the gym. If they don't bother you, they don't even exist. Get in, do your shit and get out. Looking around will just make you RAGE.
>> Anonymous
>It's like have big brakes on a geo

I lol'd
>> Anonymous
there is no need to work out your biceps, if you have a decent workout routine. Most back exercises also work the biceps (rows/pull ups). Why anyone would willingly waste time to do something that will only make them look more like a douchebag is beyond me.
>> Anonymous
>>409296
i am with you 99% of the way on this.

to me, actually spending the opportunity cost to do isolation on biceps makes you a massive faggot, as you could easily be doing farmer's walks, weighted chins, and heavy pulls to ensure much better systemic results

also, training arms represents all that pathetic, weak, narcissistic mentality shit that i hate, as training should be INTERNAL not external. Biceps training is the epitome of “im doin’ for the looks”

'bigger' arms at the expense of anything else (short of abs, brah) demonstrate you are faggot and probably a shitty person

BUT.

biceps, because i go out of my way not to train them, became my biggest weakpoint in strongman comp, as in the 12" log clean, biceps are heavily recruited during the "clean" phase, which is a glorified, 2phase reverse power curl.

TLDR: biceps training is still fucking gay and I’m proud that I haven’t done less than 10 sets over the course of the last 3 years. And about that log clean? I still have any biceps trainer by a good 150lbs and my max chin of 295 laughs its ass off at your preacher curls.

MATTHIAS STEINER FTW!

OP here.

>>409247
It doesn't bother me, it just makes me lol.

>>409334
IMO theres nothing wrong with doing a couple of sets of curlz as assistance exercise. However, it's fucking retarded if your entire workout is 20 different curl variations.

And yes, Matthias Steiner is a god among men.

>>409344
Poliquin put it best son

"you dont deserve to curl till you can give me 6 reps with half you body weight [attached] on chins"
>> Anonymous
>>409352
Poliquin is one smart motherfucker.

This is a bit of a random question, but I don't want to make a thread for it.
Just started doing deadlifts about 2 weeks ago, 5x5. Today I did 240lbs. 6'2", about 190lbs. Good progression? Bad?
Also, I do not have a squat rack, and I'm poor as shit, but, I don't want to skip out on doing squats, any alternatives? or squat with low weight?
>> Anonymous
>>409374
Not bad, I'd recommend only doing one 1x5 working set for DL's though.

As for Squatting, you could build yourself a pair of squat stands for about 50 bucks with a couple of buckets, some 4x4's, and some cement.http://www.casualhacker.net/blog/2008/04/homemade-squat-stands/

"The lesson I learned: If you're going to compete in strongman competitions, you'd better train your arms."

just don't be a faggot who only trains arms every day with a million sets of curls.
>> Anonymous
>>409381
I see. Why do you recommend 1x5 if you don't mind me asking?
I appreciate the link, I'll be sure to definitely take this into consideration, thanks.
>> Anonymous
>>409396
because he's a fag who bobs rippetoe's cawk

do whatever works for you, sure '1x5' will, for a bit of time, but that is neither
A. optimal
B. the only path

training 1x5 will get you better at pulling 5 reps, for one set. yes that sounds...primative, but adaptation is specific to imposed demands.

>opportunity cost
Economics? In MY /fit/?
>> Anonymous
try 5 x 1. if you dare.
>> Anonymous
>>409405
Rippetoe knows more than you. Accept it.
>> Anonymous
>>409396

Because the only good deadlift is a heavy fucking deadlift. As in, a beginner would be expected to lift 2x bodyweight within six months. Doing that 5x5 will just be brutal.

Keep in mind this is including warm ups too.
>> CWheezy !!bJFrM5LONOF
>>409466
If rippetoe's program was so good, then why do the best athletes / powerlifters not do it?

Because there are much better ways to lift weights
>> Anonymous
>>409466
you know, i'm going to question that, at least as his body of work is expressed (not saying he doesnt do more)

but he either does basic, highschool level athlete stuff or crossfit.

both populations are 'noobs' so its pretty hard not to make gains.

i will absolutely tip my hat to him that he preaches common sense (basic lifts, no extra shit) very well, just a step up from the medhi, who has NO FORMAL BACKGROUND AT ALL. so its no 'biggie'. sure maybe that how Rip markets, but his stuff is fucking remedial, and jim wendler did not truly mean what he said on the recommendation....

but Rip would get eaten alive by any body well versed in proper Eastern Bloc methods, science, poliquin, etc

dont be fooled by his 'biomechanics' drawings, he singularly stands alone in his view of the squat vs. 100% of the OL community. and considering he works with HS kids, vs. 100% of the OL community and college, professional, olympic, etc...
>> Anonymous
>>409523
is not me

just a hivemind

rip is fine for beginners. simply comical after that point. BUT at most, 1 in 100 of you lazy, ignorant 'biceps, brah' fags will ever make it consistantly out of 'beginnerhood' by any sense any measure. so doing Rip (who ripped off Starr) till the end of time will be fine. just 'enjoy' trying to squat 3x a week when you are anything but young, ignorant, and a beginner.
(and you shits who strive to have a BMI <18 cuz you are ab fags DO NOT COUNT)
>> Anonymous
>>409523

athletes train like that you fucking idiots. Do you think track and field athletes train with some fucking body part split? How about olympic weightlifters, you fucking dolts?
And about powerlifters, are you fucking serious? Russian and the other eastern block powerlifters train like that. FUCK

>>409533

and you fucking idiot, Rippetoe was Starr's pupil, so how fucking shocking their shit is similar.

How is it that I know olympic weightlifters who squat almost every day of the week? I squat 4 times a week and it's not a problem.

Fucking roid rage.
>> CWheezy !!bJFrM5LONOF
>>409543
I don't know about the second part, but you are definitely wrong about the whole athletes train like rippetoe's program. Cause they all, don't and stuff.

You know, with the you being wrong, and whatnot.
>> Anonymous
>>409543
(sigh)
you are so ignorant (as in, you dont know that you do NOT know) that we simply can't have a discussion

learn to read. and how possibly, after discussion 'top level athletes/PL/OLs' did you come up w/body part splits to 'make a stance'?

now I get to RAAAGGGGEEEEE

NOTICE HOW I COMMENTED ON RIP'S SQUAT STYLE, AND HOW NO ONE, AND I MEAN NO ONE ELSE IN THE PROFESSIONAL/OLYMPIC S&C COMMUNITY SQUATS LIKE THAT? so yah, no problem doing squats long term ATG, proper OLY style. hell, i do sheiko, where i back squat 4x a week and i have done OLY lifting where i squat 6x a week (not including full Cleans or OHSQ). but again, LOL to doing it Rip's way if you are anything but a total shit brick beginner.
>> Anonymous
>>409549

So atheletes in your opinion don't train the squat, various presses and various pulls several times a week?

>>409551

Have you read Rippetoe's reasoning for squatting the way he suggests? Low bar, medium wide stance will make you use larger amount of muscle than high bar squat. Why would you want to use less muscle for the best assistance exercise for the majority of sports? While it's not mechanically the best suited for powerlifting purposes but it'll work pretty well even for that. The only problem for me so far has been that I don't get as much bang from the modern squat suits.
>> CWheezy !!bJFrM5LONOF
Wow, bitches don't know how to read.

I'm saying athletes don't do his 5x5 bullshit, nor do they squat and dead 3 times a week.

Rippetoe back when he was competing.
>> Anonymous
>>409557

TROLL

0/10

ironic, but Rip's recommended squat style IS the powerlifting style, especially if you are squatting single ply AND have to walk it out. widen it a bit, throw on the double ply and monolift, and you have the Westside style powersquat, emphasis on BACK not down.

THAT IS WHY ATHLETES do not NORMALLY train them, as it is a specific, intentionally limited ROM (sure, defranco does them sometimes, but he's a pseudo westsider)

and i have already countered the point you made about sports specific squatting, by the fact that NOONE^100 else does this style within any PROFESSIONAL or OLYMPIC level. this is strictly a stupid HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN I PUT ON THE BAR american highschool style form of lifting. that is all. no more, no less.
>> Anonymous
>>409559

Ah, I understand now. I thought you were saying athletes don't train in a similar way. Are you seriously wondering why higher level athletes don't train with a program that's called 'Starting Strength'?
>> Anonymous
>>409561

It's not the same. Even IPF powerlifters in general squat wider than that. Notice the 'modern squat suits'. Surely you understand you'll get the most bang from them with wider stance.

You haven't countered anything, you're only backing up your argument with authority. Just answer the question, what's wrong with Rippetoe's argument that if you're squatting as an assistance exercise you should squat the way that stresses the biggest amount of muscle mass? The fact that you connect this type of squatting with that high school bullshit reeks of ignorance. Have you even read Rippetoe's texts?
>> Anonymous
>>409562
oh, so now its CWheezy who has the 'comprehension' issues....

right

this thread and OP is gay. not even gonna read all this shit im just gonna say that and BYE
>> Anonymous
>>409566

No, I'm not saying he has comprehension issues. I said I understood him wrong in the first place and I'm just wondering if he's seriously wondering why higher level athletes don't train exactly the way 'Starting Strength' goes.
