I was debating with myself earlier over what type of martial art to seek training in, and I wanted to ask 4chan. There's this new fitness board, so I thought I'd ask.

I'm 115 lbs and of average height for a girl. I have done some weight training already and walk quite a bit. I have a friend who does kenpo and another who used to do kendo. I'm not too particular, I just think working out might be more interesting if I'm trying to obtain a skill at the same time.

What does anon suggest?
>> Anonymous
Depends on what your looking for. Are you trying to just kick ass at any cost? or are you looking for peace of mind?
>> Anonymous
If working out is your only goal, anything will do fine. Pick something that looks cool. If you have any need of any particular skill (dexterity or flexibility or self defense), then you should be more specific.
>> Anonymous
UGh, this should be a sticky.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is probably what you're looking for.

Great exercise and it's practical in a real defense situation.

Don't believe me? Watch the UFC

Note: ( I wish I could say MMA but I bet you fags have no idea what that is)
>> Anonymoose
A little of both, I think. Mainly to get some fighting techniques though, I have a pretty stable sense of inner balance already. Although I do visit 4chan everyday.

Boxing would be my suggestion.
>> Anonymous
I see the brazilian jj fags have already chimed in. I'm going to put in my plug here for Systema and Krav Maga - both can give you a hell of a work out, and both train very effective, real-world defense and survival techniques.

/disagree; bjj is a ground art predominantly; youll be rolling in no time and youll be expecting to lay down-thats good for 2 things...1 of them is against your will

id argue that you take boxing or wing chun-considering that if a guy touches you, you can break his nose or snap his elbow-plus wing chun is a great party favor

LAWL, So you're argument is that if she can hit him he'll run away? If a guy was going to rape her BJJ would be the BEST MARTIAL ARTS for her to know. I train with some 115 pound girls that can kick my 160 pound ass.
>> Anonymous
>>6099

If she lives someone she can't find a Krav Maga studio, she's probably not going to be able to find a qualified BJJ instructor either. Out in the sticks, it's pretty much either Karate or Tai Kwon Do, at least in the sticks I used to live in.
>> Anonymous
Take kung fu. You learn some self defense, but you mostly get more endurance, dexterity, and what not.

I take shaolin kung fu and I sparred with my friend that does Muy Thai and he was beating the crap out of me until I pulled a scissor kick. I was freakishly lucky...
>> Anonymous
For exercise? Tai Chi.

For real fights? NONE.

Learn to street fight. Bite, kick, throw dirt, kick them in the shins and balls. If you actually get in a fight where someone wants to kill you, why the fuck are you gonna follow rules? Strike first. Strike fast. Strike hard. RUN.

Very true. I was going to suggest Judo (because it's a badass workout), but with this post in mind I'll have to suggest BJJ.

Though, if OP was male I'd suggest Judo.
>> Anonymous
It's irrelevant to state which martial art is better than the other, because I'm willing to bet that anyone who has the time to master a particular martial art is not going to rape you, much less fight you. This is one of those few times where you are allowed to pick the one that looks the coolest/sounds the coolest.

You're saying that one shouldn't learn a "superior" martial art because such superiority doesn't matter only because if someone wants to fight you, they wouldn't know a martial art (therefore having a better martial art wouldn't matter)? The purpose of learning a superior art is to be able to handle any kind of fight better than another art. A shitty art vs some random dude isn't as good as a godly art vs some random dude.

Shingitai Jujitsu.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD: MMA is not that amazing. At least, everyone who I've known from it has been a total douche. (The few I've met, however, have all been disdainful of me using Jujitsu as a philosophy and not a sport, so this is all in my opinion.)

That said: Brazilian Jujitsu can be very interesting- Lots of mat work and grappling. They're like freaking monkeys. Freaking hardcore monkeys.

If you're interested in it as a work out, practical self-defense, and philosophy, I would check out the book "Small Circle Jujitsu" by Wally Jay. Just go sit down in Borders and flip through it. Wally J. Taught my sensei, so that's what I do.

The jujitsu I do is very versitile. I just received my third degree brown belt (Yes, still a bit of a newb,) but through the use of pressure points and off balancing, I'm pretty sure I could handle myself in a situation.

This is all coming from a 19 year old, 5'5", 100 pound chick. Small-circle Jujitsu for the win.

here. Just another thing:

Brazilian guys? We had a Brazilian Jujitsu guy in our class last sesester. The man was small, skinny, and a monster with groundwork. But he always did the same thing: grapple, grapple, Juji gatame. Grapple, grapple, juji gatame. Always the cross body armlock. If he tried that on the street, the assailants evil buddy would come up and kick the shit out of him.

Anyway- I started sparring with him and immediately went for the eyes, as I was trained to do. The guy fucking PANICKED. He had no idea what to do when someone didn't play by the rules. I took a chunk out of his calf with my teeth, too.

I did it for the lulz.

tl;dr- I again suggest jujitsu, mostly because that's what I'm familiar with, and it's just like Judo- Except NASTY.

Such as the throw Ippon Seoi Nage- Instead of just throwing them, we snap the fucking elbow as they go over.

I've been in martial arts for more than half my life, and I've found the one I fall to in actual real life situations is aikido. i took fencing and unless you carry a cane or a fucking umbrella all day, I would advise against it. If you do happen to have a stick like thing around you, sabre is the most effective, unless the stick is pointy, then go for epee.

It all depends on the person who is teaching it to you, and the people there who train with you.

And as for what martial, it's up to you. You'll find (when you take away the pissing contest) that many stand up styles are very, very similar, Most aspects of karate, Mauy Thai, Savate, kickboxing, they all use basically the same techniques and excersises. If you put the effort in they will all be very benifitial in the way of self-defense. BJJ, Judo, Sambo etc have very much blended together since the MMA inception, so any of those would also be great.

But yeah, all that means nothing if you train with people who don't have a clue, don't train hard, or have an inflated ego. I reccomend looking around, going to a class or two and checking it out before you commit.

not sure why I feel the need to defend bjj, but, I do have to say that it's the "tangling" you describe which makes bjj as gentle or brutal of an art as you want it to be. It's just as easy to restrain someone while screaming "call 911", as it is to choke someone out or break a limb. The same can't be said for striking arts, and I would argue, Aikido. Using a wrist lock to throw someone who doesn't know to roll or otherwise move to prevent joint damage (as you would know to), especially in a panic situation, seems like a recipe for multiple fractures and a face plant on the cement.

Assuming you could grab their wrist in the first place.

Which I don't think you could.

find a school that offers training in an authentic style. This will educate you with a lifestyle/philosphy rather than just exercises for ass kicking...which realistically, being a girl would not be the best option.

Take my advice and learn from a master of an art that is from his bloodline.
>> Anonymous
Anyone recommending martial arts with heavy (or sole) emphasis on grappling for the sake of practical self-defense is a fucking idiot and their opinions should be disregarded outright. Don't ignore grappling, but do NOT focus on it primarily. It is next to fucking useless in the real world.

"Look at MMA if you want proof!"

SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU CLUELESS SHIT. MMA FIGHTS ARE SANCTIONED AND HAVE RULES, AND ARE 1 ON 1. I hope you get a chance to use your BJJ skills in real life some time. While you're choking out assailant number one his friends will be kicking your head in. This is a good thing; if they damage you enough you may die.

OP, focus on stand-up fighting. Situational awareness comes with a great majority of such arts and thus there will be next to no need to ever go to the ground.

I can't agree more. The last thing you want when on the streets is to try to pin one guy down to cause him pain. Punches, kicks and elbow/knee strikes can do the same, faster and safer.

To the point,I practice Aikido 2 years now and would suggest it as far as working out goes. If you find a proper instructor you can also learn the proper use of weapons and be much safer than bare handed. Believe me,everyone and anyone reconsiders attacking you when you pull out a knife.
>> Anonymous
>>6485

I think OP left /fit/ a long time ago and considering she was considering kendo and such, I don't think she was worried about bar fights.

But, the idea of anyone fending off multiple attackers (everything else being equal) without a firearm is just silly. Not that trying to grapple your through a gang of knife-wielding bad guys isn't stupid as well, I'm just saying that some kind of striking art would only delay your ass getting kicked by a few seconds at best.

The martial art that will give you the most full body strength/work out is Capoeira, however its not the most practical for self defense (although oldschool Brazilian gangsters would combine the martial art with the use of a knife making it lethal), its just really really cool to show off with.

I forget the name of the style that Bruce Li practiced, but its possibly the best martial art for a woman to learn for self defense. It teaches you how to overcome someone much larger than you. Its not about flashy kicks, or punches, or flipping a person, or anything like that.

I really love Hapkido, it's changed some parts of my life. Though it has been hard finding the right teachers, I believe that is the key to any martial art. The next always then is pushing yourself to grow beyond instructors and finding new ones, eventually finding solace in yourself for your accomplishments.

It's hard to believe that not one person on this board recommended Hapkido, it's Aikido mixed with ground fighting, minor offensive techniques and a modern mindset.

It can be used by smaller people very effectively like Aikido can, though constant training in technique is required. It's been a few months since I've done anything actively, which can be harmful and dangerous if you're considering a martial art for defense.

For the sake of thread argument Brazilian Jujitsu is a bad idea for anyone not completely buffed out. Understanding concepts and techniques in jujitsu, not Brazilian jujitsu will help you far more. A guillotine isn't appropriate for all situations.

Bruce Lee's style was Jeet Kune Do, which highlighted the efficient use of force. Instead of pure blocking in a traditional martial arts sense, the block became a strike; and instead of large sweeping blocking motions they were short powerful and quick. Jeet Kune Do, because of its technique is quite difficult to master, it is an art o preemption rather than first strike.
If one is serious about taking up an art than I would recommend Karate. Even though it gets a bad rap because of it being commercialized it is a good place to start. It will teach you good foundations, and all the moves are practical for real world application.
>> Anonymous
>>7527

Jeet Kune Do is more of a fighting philosophy to be applied to martial arts in general than a set school of techniques. It's useful to learn, but not on it's own and not as a first martial art.

Anon suggests Thai Kickboxing and Jujitsu. Friendly on beginners, and useful techniques.
