I've read the book published by Atkin's a few years ago. I believe he stated that there is a part of the population that reacts to diet soda / artificial sweeteners the same way they would with regular sweetener. That is, there is an insulin release. Now that I think about it, I think Lyle McDonald said similar in his Ketogenic Diet book.
It is then surmised that it is not eaten fat that makes you fat but the insulin process converting to fat. Sorry, I am not a biochem - but I think I boiled down the summary well.
I stay away from diet soda only because I am trying my best to restrict chemicals from coming into my body whenever I have control of doing so. The sodium plays into that equation somewhat too, but there's not a huge amount I guess...
It sounds like you like diet soda a lot. Try weaning yourself a bit at a time. You are right, there are worse things, but just the same, there are better things than diet soda.
