hi /fit/

im 25, 180lbs, 6'3. i started doing cardio (elliptical) recently for the first time in a couple months, 40 minutes, 120ish rpm, lvl 5 (meh). my bpm was around during the first half 180 and finished around 200.

my friend tells me the the "fat burn" is between 130-170 bpm, and anything above 180 is bad for you, and anything above 200 as he stated is "heart collapse" or something equally retarded.

is he correct? or am i doing fine? im guessing my bpm is so high since i just started out of the blue. do i want to target within the 130-170 area if need be?

180? Jesus.
I've gone up to 180...but I was going as fast I could...like 14 miles an hour. I wouldn't know whether or not that's close to "heart collapse" but I'm sure it can't be great for you. I shoot for 165 at least with 170 in mind. Everyone's different, though, I guess.

"fat burn" zone is a myth gyms and personal trainers use to sell you heart rate monitors

Also, when I was in high school I lost a TON of weight and all I was doing was running for 30 minutes a day. The way I look at it, if your shirt is drenched in sweat when you finish you'll lose weight.

400 BPM = DEHYDRATED BRO... as in, symptom of...

You're gonna die from it... NOW STOP IT!

Now stop ..doing cardio? I don't know what else I could do, it's the elliptical. Im sure if I was running it would be higher. I'm not overweight, but I'm sure not as hell in shape.

So what I've gathered from this is that 180-200 is BAD? If I keep a regular routine would it eventually go down?

OP, I think I'm on the same boat as you. I know those heart rate monitors aren't completely accurate, but especially on ellipticals I get up to 185-190 heart rate all the time on different ones, and I feel like its pretty intense but I can usually last 20 minutes and more no problem at that rate. I'm 20, and definitely no track runner or anything, but I do have energy and can run.

I typically try to keep it a little lighter though, because I have heard that going that high owns your muscle mass. I know I've been told that I had an extremely healthy heart when i was born, though I would imagine it got destroyed in my teens from shit food yet I can still keep insane heart rates.

its not exact... i do the same thing (get up to 180 bpm). there are obviously more variables to it than just age that aren't taken into account on the global scale (max heart rate that is and the formula 220-age=Max)

Holy fuck 180-190? You're hearts are fucking pumping with the fist of the north start. Holy fuck, I'd expect you to be dead but if not then you to have an extremely hardened heart no joke.
