Hey /fit/

All my life I've been a really skinny guy. I've had people look at me sometimes and say things like "wow do you ever eat" and have them compare the size of their wrists to mine in mock fascination. I'm 5'10 and I weigh about 115 lb. I eat really well and I generally tend to be hungry throughout the day. I exercise two or three times a week and get decent sleep.

But I never gain weight. I'm still growing since im only 18 but I can't get a pound on me. I know people go on diets to lose weight, but is there a diet to gain it?

Help a brother out

Cheeseburgers and milkshakes.

Just eat a diet thats high in fat. If you eat more calories than you're burning, you'll gain some weight.

I don't know what your diet is now but thats where I would start.

Buy it by the bucket, eat it by the handful

I have the same problem, to a lesser degree. I'm 5'10" and 135. I work out and eat 3500-4000 calories a day and I can't gain weight (on a good day I'll just barely get up to 140).

If you have this type of body type, it's not going to change much. Working out will just make you really toned, not bigger.

My advice is to do what I did: become a runner and maybe you'll be really good. Then you'll still be skinny but at least you'll be athletic.

Load up on chocolate milk and peanut butter. It helps me gain weight, but I usually end up losing it when I get sick of peanut butter.

I've been stuck at 120 for longer than I care to remember

OP Here

Although I'm skinny I'm still really lazy and I don't know if I have the patience for running or sports. Also I have asthma so that never helps after 10 minutes of strenuous breathing. I don't want to resort to gaining weight through unhealthy fats, I'm sure there's another way

Also it is kind of some consolation to know the more I work out even if I am skinny I will get more and more toned

Yes, there is. The diet is straightforward and formulaic in the extreme--eat more than your basal metabolic rate multiplied by a coefficient reflecting your activity level. Specifically, eat about 500 calories per day more.

Eat lots of protein. You require at least 0.8g/kg of body mass. Athletes often consume up to 2.2g/kg.

Eat more than three times a day--five or six is best--eat carbs in the morning. All the rest is details.

Hit the local gym. Bigger muscles = more weight and that way you won't look so skinny.

Honestly the best advice is to up your calorie intake and lift weights. There are weight gain shakes you can take that have 600-900 calories in a single shake. You should definitely supplement with protein. I am in the same situation but I personally don't feel like a weight gain shake is healthy so what I'm doing is hitting the gym a bit harder (trying 5 days a week) and having about 2-3 shakes a day (350 calories a shake) and eating like i'd normally do.

The wrist shit has to be the most annoying thing ever. I fucking get it, I have small wrists.

then you'll have some fuckface say "God how could you be so skinny" or "how could you have such skinny wrists" in an accusing tone as if it's your fault.

YES. Like the OP and some others in this thred, I have always been skinny. With a lot of food and weight lifting I've gone from ~130 in high school to ~180 (5'10"). And I still have the same 10-year old girl wrists. And I always will. And so will you. :(

So eating some fat or "unhealthy" stuff is (along with working out) A-OK if you're über skinny?

Buy yourself a set of dumbells/ hit the gym.

You will have to work twice as hard to get the same weight gain as fatter friends, but they will have to work twice as hard as you to get the same stomach definition, so everything balances out :)

Its a good idea to keep your diet low in sugars and as healthy as reasonable, but the weight gainer shakes mixed with milk instead of water and eating four or more regular sized meals per day will do a lot for you. Junk food is just shit and not great for you no matter what, but fast food is a great way to pound in fats and carbs, which you should be getting a large amount of. Your body uses more calories per day than a "normal" person, so you have to maintain a higher caloric intake than the 2000 per day that is recommended. I made my best gains without actually counting the carbs in everything I ate by making sure I had 2000 calories worth of shakes every day regardless of anything else I was eating.

This is a great thread. Thanks OP and everyone who has put decent feedback. I used to go to the gym frequently during high school and have only started doing more work at home in the last 10 weeks or so. I'm constantly being reminded of how small I am, yet my muscle definition is far better to most people I know. I've been trying to gain weight for the last year or so but i can barely break the 55kg mark regardless of how much I eat. I'll think i'll look into these shakes but i might just increase my meals per day before i start investing money into suplements.
