Hey /fit/, i'd like to start getting myself into the right shape to be able to do a triathlon. What are some good places to start, in terms of resources and routines and the like?

Do you have a decent base at all? Or, have you just decided to get into good shape with no real prior aerobic training?

Frankly i'm in no shape to even thinking of competing yet. I'm overweight (5'10 and 218 lbs) and currently working on lowering that primarily through cycling and swimming. What i'm looking to do is ease into the essentials of triathlon exercise as I get more fit.

In regards to training, none really. I know how to ride a bike of course and i've taken a class on getting the Front Crawl, Backstroke and Breaststroke down for swimming but beyond that i've just done what comes naturally.

I understand from that standpoint is that no matter what you'll need a sizable aerobic base, from which you can improve your speed and strength. Running is an excellent way to build that base and swimming compliments a training routine well as it puts much less stress on the body compared to the pounding effect of running. You'll need to start running and the couch to 5-k is an excellent introduction.

From what I see, keep doing what your doing with your cycling and swimming, just take baby steps with your training till you lose that weight. Leave a lot of room for recovery.

I stumble upon'd this just today...I thought about looking over it and trying it out myself but I have no access to a pool. I didn't have a chance to actually look at it, but I know it has training programs on it...I don't know if you have to pay or what, but the URL says it all...
