(part 1)
Over the past 1 or 2 months something has been way off about my sleep. I've always been a night owl and it's very usual for me to be on a vampire sleep schedule, i.e. sleeping all day and staying up all night, as that's how my body clock usually functions...I'll be awake, active, energetic and alert during the night time and drowsy, dead tired and with zero energy during the day time...see the attached Calvin and Hobbes strip for a good example.

But lately it's been even worse. I haven't been able to get to sleep until 7, 8 or 9AM and I've been sleeping 10 to 13 hours after that, then when I wake up even after all that sleep I'll feel like I haven't slept at all. Even though my sleep schedule HAS been messed up in the past, I've still been able to get to sleep around 3, 4 or 5AM and wake up after 7 or 8 hours of sleep around noon or so...now I'm not able to get up before around 3 or 4PM, and no matter when i DO get up, I still feel totally exhausted and unrested.

Another thing I should mention is that literally EVERY single night for the past one or two months I've been having very long, intense, complex and vivid dreams. They haven't been recurring or about anything specific or particularly meaningful, but I'm always able to remember them when I wake up and when I do wake up I feel like I just got done watching a 4 hour movie in my head. This is very unusual for me and I can't remember a time in my life before this when I've had anything like this occur, just the past couple months.

(part 2)
SO, bottom line...over the past few months, for whatever reason, I've been: finding it incredibly difficult to go to sleep, finding it incredibly difficult to sleep for less than 10 - 13 hours when I finally do get to sleep, feeling insanely tired and unrested no matter when I wake up, having crazy complex dreams every night of the week when I sleep, and none of this has ever happened to me besides just recently. Does this sound like symptoms of anything, or is there a name for any of this? More importantly, is there something I can do to treat it? I have a road trip coming up in a week and then a whole bunch of other events after that, all of which require me to be awake, active and alert during the day and able to sleep at a decent hour of the night, so any kind of help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

1) better diet
2) watch what you eat in the time before sleep
3) breakfast within 30 min of awake
4) melatonin or if you like to $$$ away ambien
5) 10-13 hours of sleep is bad less than 7 is bad. you should shoot for 7-9 hours.
6) get a chick to give sex at nite and morning blowjobs
7) smoke weed.

worked for me.

I've been having the exact same problem. There was a time where I was up for the sunrise for an entire week.

I haven't tried this yet, but here's some advice I've been getting from my friends on how to 'reset' your body clock:

Set a goal for yourself. Like me, I want to start going to bed at like 10:30. So instead of sleeping during the day, just skip it and stay up all day and all night, so that you're dead tired by the time 10:30 comes around and you can just crash. Make sure you've set your alarm clock for a reasonable wake-up time (6:30 or something). I guess you might be tired through the next day, but keep going to bed at your goal time, and it might work that way.

I've been too wimpy to try this because I don't want to waste an entire day being a zombie...

OP here;

No more stressed out than usual. I've tried to think about any changes in my life or daily activity that could have brought this about, but I can't come up with anything. These past few months (June, May, April) have been pretty much the same as the few months before them (March, February, January), the only difference is the sleep thing has been way off.

I've tried this, more than once. Both times I failed. The first time I woke up at 2PM, stayed up all night and through the morning but around 1PM I crashed and fell asleep until midnight, totally ruining my schedule again. The second time I figured a good way to stay up all night and all day was to drive all night to a point about 8 hours away on the coast, watch the sunrise, then take a casual drive back home and go to sleep in the evening when I got home again. This worked great up until the drive back, where at around 2:30PM after no sleep for such a long period of time I had to pull the car over on my way back because I could barely keep my eyes open and didn't want to fall asleep at the wheel. I slept in my car on the side of the road for hours, woke up and it was dark, got back home at around 2AM and fell back into the same abnormal sleep cycle all over again. So that method hasn't worked so far for me, unfortunately.

im the same way op. Im a total fucking night owl, I would never even see the light of day if it wasnt for all the obligations that life entails. The only way that I can really get around it (which has been mentioned here) is to just bite the bullet and skip sleep until you are balls-to-the-walls tired enough to get to sleep around the time that you are shooting for

i just dont fucking get morning people. i had a friend back in highschool who would go to sleep at like 9pm and wake up at like 4 fucking am. I would go to sleep at 4am and zombie out through school every day.
