sports drinks are loaded with salt and sugar. if you are actually playing a high-energy-output sport, and need a quick pick-me-up, that sugar and salt can be a quick replenishing of sugar (for quick energy) and salt (for losses of salt from sweating).
however, the quick sugar does have a crash at the end (just watch the end of a sugar high on a young child for an example of the kind of crash i'm referring to), but hopefully your game is done by then.
now, sports drinks outside that frame of reference: similar to drinking a lot of sugary soda. so downing a quart of gatorade every hour while playing WoW is not an ideal health proposition.
