A cardio workout has two stages separated by a brick wall: stage 1 is glycogen burning; energy from carbs which is stored in your muscles is burnt. Then comes the brick wall (literally known as hitting the wall). This is due to the depletion of glycogen and your body converting to fat burning.
SO, a good cardio workout diet is one that is mid fat/protein, and high in complex carbs. Do not deprive yourself of fat -- it is essential not only as the second stage of energy production, but padding for your joints, which is doubly essential in repetitive, high impact motions. That said, you have to eat the right kinds of fats; don't just down a bucket of lard.
