Chins/Pull-Ups Anonymous
/fit/!

I suck at chin-ups and pull-ups. I finally got a decent bar and have started focusing on them. At first I couldn't do one, now I can struggle into two. Is there any other exercise I can do that will help strengthen those muscles?

I've read about the swinging pull-ups (whatever the name is) but I just don't have the room to execute them properly. Right now I've been getting to the half-way point and just holding it for as long as possible. Is this helping at all? Any help?

Thanks!

Letdowns, where you begin at the high position and resist on the way down, will help. Jumping pull ups are also good.

If you have some money to spend, look for jumpstretch or Iron Woody bands. Loop them around the pull up bar and you can use them for support.

Thanks sir! I'll have to pass on paying money right now since part of my next paycheck is going to fund a new squat rack and some used weights/weight bar off Craigslist.

It's your back, not your arms. Try this with low weight

Also hanging in the pull up position can help. Just keep trying. They're hard.

sorry I was short. What I mean to say is, most people think chin ups are for your arms. So start with some of those, 3 sets of 4-8 for a week or two and watch your ability rise

Thanks again for the help guys. I sort of pieced together a jumping pull-up into a let-down and tried sets of seven (pretty much LTF for me.)

No offense taken. I used to wrestle waaaaaaaaay back in highschool, so I remember doing a ton of back exercises and this being one of them.

True, also any variation of the row, like row...ing a boat. T-Bar row you could probably do with a chair and some wait, might not be comfortable though.

And if you're going to do a row, pull the bar to your waist for back, pull it to your neck for shoulders

Pull ups take time. You've crossed the biggest barrier: actually getting your chin over the bar without jumping. The rest will come with effort.

Do you live in a town or city? Most places will have outdoor workout stations in parks. You can practice kipping pull ups there, if you like.

if you can do 2, just keep fuckin' crankin' dat shit till it hurts. Go eat a whole chicken, wait 2 days and do it again.

Not OP, but just wanted to say... a week ago, I could just finish 5x5 pull ups. Today, I did so with ease. =)

chin ups are by far my favorite thing to do while lifting.

My routine is pretty hardcore... but I still love pull ups more than anything else.
in a few months you'll be cranking them out like nothing... and its going to feel great.

I thought chin-ups were for your arms, pull-ups for your back.

When you do chin-ups, put one leg on a chair. Yes its cheating but it helps you build up to full chin-ups and pull-ups using all your bodyweight.
