hey fit, i have a question about booze and fitness.

i drink a lot. as a 22 year old college student the only way to really "unwind" at night is to drink (pot is too expensive btw).

in my recent attempts to eat healthy and try to get in better shape i can't help but feel that beer is contributing a lot to my weight. on the other side, i have heard that the "beer belly" is a myth.

any info about beer in relation to fitness? will it really add a lot of weight? what do you /fit/ drinkers do?

Alcohol is dense in calories. Its not that beer causes a belly, its that alcohol is high in calories (around 200 for a beer on average) which is obviously going to make you fat if you like going out to get drunk alot. Outside that it is a poison, it screws around with your liver amongst other things. I went cold turky on booze about 5-6 months ago and only used it twice (in the same week) to go out with friends. It has its uses as i was on a plateau and i was feeding my body crap during that week then returning to normal and increasing exercise to break through it. You can drink in moderation, but personally if you have a set goal in a timeframe it comes down what you want more - goals or alcohol.

A couple drinks a day is actually good for you (read one or two, not six). Past that you're just racking up a bunch of empty calories, and if you really overdo it you're definitely going to start pissing off some organs. So, best bet is to learn to enjoy A beer, meaning one, in the evening and not binge drink every night. I drank way too fucking much in college and it was a hard habit to scale back down to a reasonable level. Just try not to over do it.
