Hey there /fit/,

I got quite a scare today. I was working like normal and while I was taking a customers order I got a slight chest pain behind my left breast. Seems normal enough since I do get muscle spams there but not a minute later my left arm and chest went numb.

I'm only 19 but could this be a slight... well I don't know if I'm even old enough to have a heart attack. Maybe it was just a clot moving through? It there anything else that creates this symptom?

In b4 fatty. I'm only 95lbs. Although my diet isn't the best either.

Sounds like angina. A pretty and common condition.

Easy to say if you have some kind of medical coverage or enough money to see one. I have neither. You know with a so so job and bills.

>>33815
Thanks for the link. I guess the two things I will do is change my diet and exercise. Still scary though.

See a doctor. Soon.

You're doing something wrong if you can't go to a doctor to be checked for a potentially fatal condition.

I don't believe that an EEG is that expensive.
Also: shame on amerikkka for not covering even basic medical needs.
>> ?suomynonA?
at 19 you should be having NO heart problems

Numbness to the left arm is very indicative of a heart attack.

I'd ignore it for now, since you're fucking 19 and only 95 lbs

I'll see what I can do then. Last time I went to a doctor to see about something I spent $117 to get "Oh it's nothing. Here take pills that cost even more and don't do a god damn thing."

Are you a student? Your parents should still have you on their insurance until you're 24.

heart attack is not restricted to age.
It could be some heart malformation.

You don't need to be overweight to have high cholesterol and heart problems. Being young is certainly a factor, but with a bad diet/lifestyle anyone can be fucked up.

Sadly no. I went strait from High School to working. Since I was 16 in fact.

As for heart condition I know my mom said I had a 'hole" in my heart when I was really little but that cleared up years ago. Other than that I thought I was good to go.

I'm uninsured as hell right now. That's changing soon though.

Get yourself an EKG. Find a free clinic in the ghetto if you have to.
>> Anonymous
>>33865
Will do. If they got cheap planned parenthood they must have other cheap clinics.

Cool. Good luck.

I'm sure no one will care but just for the hell of it. I found a place nearby that says on the site their EKG costs $65. Even I can afford that. I will be calling later today.

Would anyone be interested in updates?

Physical heart problems normally do not develop until later in life, UNLESS YOU HAVE A HEART CONDITION. I don't know the nature of the hole in your heart, or how that resolved itself, but personally if I were in your shoes I'd get a checkup.

Your body needs a balance of Calicum, sodium, water, potassium, and magnesium to regulate heart beat (electrical function).

It doesn't take much to meet the minimum requirements for those, but if you have a severe deficiency for a prolonged period of time it can kill you. Don't go overboard with supplements, if you get too much of some of those (potassium for example), it could kill you as well.

When the body doesn't have enough of something it tends to eat what it has stored away, thus people can starve for a while and not die, but if you haven't been eating properly your storage could be low to begin with.

I was having chest pains and shortness of breath for a while about 2 years ago. It was pretty much because I wasn't getting enough sleep.

Thanks for the heads up. Like I said before I will be calling a local clinic later today. Hopefully I can get an appointment soon. It's cheap too so that helps with money worries.

I'll give up fast food and all these snacks I end up eating. I'll try to cook my own food with low sodium and low fat like some of the sites suggest. I was thinking about joining a gym for exercize anyways. This just helps it along. I'll start taking vitamins as well. I should have already I guess.

This could be because I'm paranoid but my arm is a bit numb right now. Has been for about an hour or two. I'm scared...

Move to Canada if you want free health care.

As much as moving to Canada sounds fun and all but I really have my heart set on Rhode Island. No matter how bad the USA gets.

Hey I have some bad news for you. Being anorexic is just as health threatening as being fat. So just because you're skinny doesn't mean you're healthy, dumbass.

Yeah, because Canadians are dropping dead from poor health care over there.

Besides, what's worse in this situation?

Ok I'm sorry my black hole is acting up again. :(

Anyways today I did decent enough although at one point I was really tired and I noticed my heart beating a bit fast. Though I'm not sure if that was actually caused by something or if I'm just really nervous. I'm going to a clinic on Thursday.

Okay, a heart attack, stroke, angina or any other condition CAN develop at ages as young as 19. No, it's not good. No, it's not normal. But possible? Yes. Absolutely.

What you need to know is you can have a stroke without ever actually KNOWING you had one. It's not as obvious as a movie-style clutch-the-heart-and-fall-on-the-floor like the pic you posted.

The chest pain should have been enough to get you worried, but numbness, you should have been calling 911.

Yes, get yourself to a doctor, you do need to put a priority on this. If you get any similar symptoms later get yourself to an emergency room.

Oh if I feel something like that again I will. I won't be happy about the money the will bill me but health comes first. Now I gotta ask this. My mom said that I should, well my boyfriend will have to buy it, drink about 2 oz. or so of red wine/burgundy twice a week. Could this really help in small doses?

The theory is that drinking a small amount of alcohol regularely is supposed to, over the long run, be good for your heart.

However, that claim doesn't have anything to do with actual medical practices or science. It is statistical. It comes simply from the fact that, statistically, people who drink small amounts of alcohol seem to have better hearts and less strokes than those who drink a lot or those who keep completely away from alcohol.

Is it true? Does it actually have anything to do with the alcohol? Or do people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol simply lead lives that are more ideal for your heart? Who knows. Nothing has been proven.

I think it's a bit of an urban myth, and if it does do anything, it's effects are long-term and don't have anything to do with right now.

Alcohol is a poison. Your body reacts to it in a way that happens to feel good, but your liver filters it out and ejects it from your body. If you are currently having any kind of acute heart issues, poisoning yourself slightly every day, and putting yourself through that stress doesn't seem to make sense to me.

I think the claim is that the tannins in red wine (and other things) are beneficial for the heart. Also, the was a study that found a correlation between beer consumption and some health benefit, but which was overwhelmed by several other detrimental effects that weren't the focus of that study. The popular press loves to spout shit off like "lol ur drunk uncle has less aids than u!"

My sister's father-in-law is a heart surgeon. He hates the whole wine fad thing. He personally drinks a lot of wine, but he says that alcoholism is a much bigger risk to the heart than any possible link to never drinking. That and some people develop rapid heart beats and murmurs and shit when they drink even moderate amounts of alcohol. When I drink even just a couple of drinks my heart rate goes through the roof. It's scary as fuck and I thought my heart was going to explode. That's why I've never been drunk.

Truth.

And maybe that's because you're freaking out about having a drink. Have a couple more, that'll calm you down!

i read in popular science that you'd have to drink something like 200+ bottles of red wine a day to get any health benefit from it

Ok so I won't do the whole wine thing. I have a plan for later today, when I'm able to sleep that is. I'll take a nice walk to the local plaza. That has a small little gym there. I'll look into joining for a little while since I'm hoping to move soon anyways. Then I'll go over to KMart and get my Blood Pressure taken. Get some vitamins that have cholesterol helpers. Then Thursday I'm going to the clinic. Hopefully they will do some blood work.

The reason for going to Kmart for both of those things is because High Cholesterol and high blood pressure run in my family. I just want to see if thats having an effect on me.

I might as well say here that while I was laying down to try and fall asleep I felt my heart racing and suddenly it felt like although I was breathing I wasn't getting any air out of it. At least not a decent amount. Was that a panic attack?
