sup /fit/,

i wanna start running but i work 3-12 and go to college all day so i dont have the time to do it in the mornings. i feel the urge to exercise at night and was thinking of just running in place.

Is running in place healthy, will it be effective?

The solution is simple. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier and wake up 30 minutes earlier and run. Running in place is going to be pretty worthless compared to real running. You could jump rope if you don't want to leave the house, or buy a cheap exercise machine (bike would be your best bet). Working out in the morning is recommended anyway because you'll get the advantage of the metabolism boost all day.

Not really because running's main use of energy is to propel your body forward, and up and down any slopes.
You could do it but you really wont burn a lot of energy and honestly you wont like it and will stop after a few days.
What you could do instead is get a box or something and do step exercise on that, like the step up and down type shit.
That way you really are using muscles to lift you and do action.

I'm going to second the jumprope idea. Jumping rope is great for cardio and you can teach yourself tricks to keep up your motivation. They cost like ten bucks, so being broke is no excuse either.

Shadowboxing, along with jump roping, is one of the more intense cardiovascular workouts you can do in a confined area.

...why not just run to work or between classes?

Shadowboxing? I'm assuming that's punching the air and shit?

Would jogging in place while shadowboxing be a great substitute for actual running?

I'm in a similar boat as the OP, and my area has been having some crime problems late at night lately, so I don't feel good running my pussy ass around at night while Bubba is hiding in the bushes waiting to kidnap and rape my ass.

Also, I have a average priced exercise bike I could use instead, if that's somehow better.

Shadowboxing is better for technique than a workout, and jogging in place is inferior to jump rope.

Do jump rope for a half hour, and push-ups.

Yeah, I've always heard jumproping was great exercise. Guess I'll go out to get one.

...or run around my house attempting to find something long and heavy to use in place of it.

technically because the ground below you is moving, you are essentially moving forward. But because the ground is moving backwards you dont move...thus how a treadmill works...
The more you know!
