Looking to get into boxing. Is 18 a good age to start? Do I need to take a class or can I learn at home? How much will it cost me to get decently equipped (meaning handwraps, gloves, punching bags, lessons [if needed])?

You should be able to learn the basics yourself (if you aren't a retard) - but without sparring and a coach, you won't really be top class.

Get a book, drill the basics, get a heavy bag. Punch from your legs (!!!), stay relaxed (!!!).
Oh, and work on your endurance and cardio.

You can probably get a wavemaster bag for under $100 from a local sears or sports authority. You should buy hand wraps and gloves. I use mma style gloves so I can use my fingers if I have to.....change songs, pick my nose, etc...

At least take some beginner lessons If you haven't already. And if you do train on your own: video tape your workouts to see what you are doing wrong and what you can be doing better.

I did boxing for awhile and I would really say go with the classes, find a nice boxing gym and they will show you everything you need to know. Just make sure its legit and not a waste of your time. For equipment, handwraps, the mexican kind cuz they stretch, some decent 14oz gloves, and some boxing shoes.

Just wondering OP why did you choose boxing over different martial arts? Say muay thai, judo, wrestling, etc?

I'm guessing you already previously had an interests in it?

Also looking to start boxing but I'm 25/chubby. Is it too late? am I past my prime? I know I'm going to put in my all but don't want to get knocked out by a 19 y/o who has been doing this since he was 7

I boxed for about a year and a half, I stopped because I didn't like how I'd feel scrambled for a day or so after each fight. 18's a good age to start, Get some lessons, they're invaluable... and go to a boxing gym. You can do some training at home, but you'll still need lessons. Don't neglect your cardio, if your endurance wains in a match, you'll most likely lose.
If you get any injuries, get them taken care of immediately by a doctor or they may never heal right.

you're not passed your prime. Boxing will help you lose weight...which is good, I don't think you'd like fighting someone who is your weight with less fat and more muscle.

You should get comfortable with the idea of being rocked by 19 year olds who have been training for years...at least until you get in shape and get some good technique. It's fun anyway.

You won't be a pro unless you are some kind of freak, but do you even care? Why do you want to box? If it's for fun just do it, you'll get used to getting hit, if your gym is any good they won't just throw you to the wolves on your first day.
