CrossFit and Homoeroticism: a link? Anonymous
I've been noticing that CrossFit has a large number of pretty bois following it. You'd swear that these guys would be checking out your ass in the gym while doing their push presses with 135 lbs while you're squatting heavy.

The whole movement seems to produce dudes who don't even look strong. Svelte poofs. Watch this and tell me most these guys aren't gay-looking.

Wtf, /fit/, wtf?

Pic unrelated, but no doubt a repellant sight to Crossfitting males.

I'm saying they look unmuscular, dude. Key distinction. There's also something about their facial features, too... every single guy I've seen crossfitting has a bone structure that's vaguely feminine and, well, gay.

Probably. Those people are everywhere. I am 5' 10" and #175 and am in pretty good shape. I frequently get lardasses commenting on how I need to "eat more" and shit like that.

I have been to Europe and I felt completely normal there but in the US I sometimes really do feel as if I am somehow underweight just because I am surrounded by so many overweight fat bodies.

You know, in combat sports, the goal is to be in the lightest possible weight class you can be while having the greatest possible strength and physical conditioning. What the fuck, that's crossfit!
>> Anonymous
>>175903

You know, real life doesn't have weight classes, so what is the point of spewing that nonsense about being as light as possible, unless you're actually trying to make a weight class in a sport? Be as muscular as possible--no 220 lbs mugger fresh out of the prison exercise yard is going to stop and say that he's too heavy to rob you, you dumb bitch.

Also, the reason why the MMA sports (don't call them combat sports: I don't see any rifles) have the weight classes is because the larger guys can almost invariably fuck up the smaller guys too damned quick. You think Chuck Liddell needs to worry about having godly stamina when fighting, say, Sean Sherk? Pssht, he could not train for a few months and still win easily with a few hard punches.

I'm not a huge fan of cross fit.

1. It's not new. It's pretty much circuit training.
2. It's a fad and fads are annoying.
3. The founder of Crossfit is old and fat.
4. Any system that advocates the kip-up pull up over a real pull up is bullshit. The reason you can do more kip-ups is because you're cheating momentum, not some mystical 'full body energy transfer.'
5. Doing more of less does not necessarily translate into the same effort.
6. Much like Squatz(!), Crossfit has a place, but is not the be all end all of exercise.

Crossfit is really weight based cardio. Probably superior to regular cardio if you only do one. Inferior to weight lifting for strength building.

People talk about how Crossfitters will outsport muscleheads. Well sure, if the muscle head is training for endurance. But the muscle head will out strengthen the Crossfitter.

No one on /fit/ seems to realize you can be 205lbs of muscle, in good cardiovascular shape, and do isolation exercises. In all things, balance.

Meh. 300+ A2G squat, 400+ DL, 30+ deadhang pullups (more if I did that kipping bullshit), well under 6:00 mile (pr 4:59 few months ago), <1:00 400m, 5K run/row <20:00, etc etc.

Kipping pull-up is powerful, fun and uses the whole body. Nobody's forcing you to do kips though.

Looks like I forgot number 8.

8. People who do Crossfit get butthurt severely when you mention anything that is remotely negative about Crossfit.

As you even noted, all my points are valid. All I'm saying is Crossfit is not the second coming. I personally don't do Crossfit workouts and am in fine shape.

But I still think the kipping pullup is a travesty of nature - I've done them, I think they're stupid and I think its just a way to get more people signed up.
>> Anonymous
>>176409
>All I'm saying is Crossfit is not the second coming.
And all I'm saying is that serious Crossfitters agree with you completely. It's something they like to do and it gives the results they want. I don't see why people get so worked up about this stuff.
>> Anonymous
>>176409
>>176353here, not butthurt.

My two cents: I've cycled strength programs (Starting Strength/Practical Programming) with good enough results (intermediate to advanced for the big 5 on exrx standards) but for my line of work - 4 years fire dept, going back active USMC in August - CF is the best program for the kind of fitness I need, and it works very well for me.

And yes, I agree kipping pullups are fucking heinous.

>1. It's not new. It's pretty much circuit training.
Is that how you define the effectiveness of exercise, based on it's newness? You must be chasing after the latest and greatest infomercial bullshit with logic like that.

>2. It's a fad and fads are annoying.
It's been around nearly a decade on the web. Only noobs think it's new.

>3. The founder of Crossfit is old and fat.
Everyone gets old and fat eventually. Even Olympic athletes. Plus he's rich.

>4. Any system that advocates the kip-up pull up over a >real pull up is bullshit. The reason you can do more >kip-ups is because you're cheating momentum, not some >mystical 'full body energy transfer.'
Obviously physics is 'mystical energy transfers' according to your understanding of it. Momentum generation is the whole point of kipping pull-ups. More reps = more total work. More work = greater total load.
>> Anonymous
>>176481
(continued)

>5. Doing more of less does not necessarily translate into >the same effort.
You're right, but only if the load is significantly less than whatever you're comparing it towards. 150 lbs of strict pull-ups for 10 reps = 1500 lbs of work being done. When you do kipping pull-ups, its not like you're pulling 0 lbs. If you've ever done them, you know you can only do 5-10 more. Which means the load of a kipping pull–up is not significantly greater than a strict one. For example, if you weigh 150 again, kipping is like pulling 120 lbs of weight, but you can do it 5 more reps than a strict. So, 120 lbs for 15 reps = a load 1800 lbs. Hell, I'll even be generous with you. Lets say a kipping pull-up means you'll be pulling 100 lbs. 100 lbs at 15 reps would be the same amount as a strict hanging pull-up. But, if you're generating enough momentum to make you weigh only that much, it's a much safer bet to say you'll be doing 20 reps instead of only 15. Which means you'll be pulling a load of 2000 lbs. Personally, I do both versions of the pull-up, because I want it all.

>6. Much like Squatz(!), Crossfit has a place, but is not the be all end all of exercise.
Whatever you're doing MUST be right then. /sarcasm

I don't go out of my way to say that I'm not a huge fan of powerlifters' goals to be the strongest person possible while ignoring everything else, nor do I come up with gay ass lists of reasons why I don't like something.

Everyone says Crossfitters get butthurt when someone says they're program is uneffective. Well yea, I bet you a nickel that many will get upset too when I criticize their 5x5 lifting plan with uninformed, invalid reasons.

TL;DR - Shut up and train. That's what all of us are here for.

Why do people think kips are bullshit? Because they learned to do pull-ups without "cheating" and everyone who does them differently is wrong, that's why. Just because something is hard doesn't make it effective or smart. If I tell you go to run a marathon, it would probably be the hardest thing you've ever done, that doesn't make it the most effective way of training.

Crossfit is not a good way to train for combat sports; it features few if any sport specific movements, and it's main focus is endurance, there's very little work on power or explosiveness.
Occasionally the WOD's will feature an Olympic lift, or some crossfit bastardization of one, but doing 1-1-1-1-1 on squats once every two weeks is not the best way to build power in your legs.
The WOD's don't even cater to different bodyweights, they usually give fixed amounts of weight for people to lift.
>> Anonymous
>>176608
That's why people scale the workouts. Too heavy, scale down, too light, scale up. Very complicated.
>> Anonymous
>>176608

That is why a lot of very potent fighters follow a Crossfit orientated workout?

It is advised that a person should go on a strength program first... to establish good power and then switch to crossfit for all round application of that power, keeping a strength day in now and then to maintain explosiveness.

Also, what the hell is a sport specific movement? WHAT?

Olympic lifters usually don't go balls out in their training programs. They lift 90% of their 1RM in singles sometimes for hours with long breaks in between. That's training for real strength.

Crossfit creates people who look like marathon runners, not weight-lifters. It's an endurance activity and has no business being marketed as a strength program.

This is what the fuck everyone is talking about. There are some legit things expressed about Crossfit and the poster says "Crossfit is fine but I personally dont like it" like 3 times, but yet you still get all aggressive against him.

And your math behind the Kip Up is wrong. YouTube search for "Kipping Pullup" and there is one guy who does like 16 straight pull ups and falls off. Then he does like 40+ kipping pull ups.

I've done kipping pull ups. They're easy. I dont feel a superior burn or effort from them. I would rather focus on pull ups, abdominals, and legs, rather than half ass all 3 of them.

You can't argue with points 1,4,5, and 6.

Crossfit is a marketing tool that hooked a bunch of people and a few of you high schoolers who can't pump out a bench press over your own body weight or more than 6 pull ups love it because Crossfit! isn't about being strong, its about being fit!

Most of the Crossfags on /fit/ probably do it wrong.

If you legitimately rock out Crossfit 4 days a week, great, it will do wonders for you. If you legitimately rock out traditional weights 4 days a week, the same.

Its all really about dedication and focus, the roads all go to the same place. The Crossfit road is flavor of the month and is no better than the other major highways of fitness.
