I was watching Human Body: pushing the limits yesterday on the Discovery Channel and they mentioned something about how a lower calorie intake may extend your life. Has anyone else heard of this?

If by "lower calorie intake" you mean "not being a fat fuck" then yes, I've also heard it may extend your life.

Less then the daily recommended amount.

I've heard of this, but it doesn't sound like a life worth living. Apparently you just starve yourself by eating extremely small meals. You do try to calibrate them to be nutritious.

And did you see the example of the guy who was doing it? He didn't look very.. happy

I've heard of it. You pretty much only eat for the nutritional value/what you need. It's a great way to ruin one's relationship with food for the rest of life I guess.

You basically force your body into starvation survival mode, which carries all kinds of nasty side effects and makes you brittle, weak, and fatigued. Do that for the rest of your life and you get to live, maybe, another 5-10 years. And during those 5-10 years you grow even more brittle, weak, and fatigued

he was hardly starving himself he said he was eating like 1950 calories a day

Google/Wiki up:
Caloric Restriction with Optimum Nutrition (CRON)
Intermittent Fasting (IF; restrict eating times, not calories, getting the same benefits without massloss)

Yeah I read a lot about it and it's just plain bullshit. Decades of starvation will not only ravage you physically but the mental impact of starving for such a period of time will shorten your life about 3x times you would gain IF it worked. And it doesn't.

intermittent fasting is fascinating. I want to know more about it.

I saw some of this show too. He said at his lowest, he was eating like 1700 calories. That isn't THAT low. And he said he was currently eating 1950, which is basically what is recommended (2000 calorie diet). They said the average American eats 4000, so yes, if you eat 2000 calories you will live longer than if you eat 4000 a day.

there's something to be learned from it...

overeating = no good and will kill you fast4r.

Is not bullshit, is a proven fact, rats in the laboratoy live longer with a calorie restricted diet and very low stress.
The same happens to humans, but as someone said, I prefer to live good 50 years instead of living a longer and shittier life

Same damn thing I thought, he really isn't starving himself that much, but compared to a 4000 calorie diet it would probably be a significant increase in health.

Hmm, the thing I read a while back seemed to indicate that they were eating much less than 1700ish. Maybe a different group of folks.
