hai /fit/. im a fairly skinny guy (5 foot 8, 135lbs) and i want to put on muscle so i was doing two muscle groups 3 times a week (mainly upper body). So i went to my gym instructor and he said you are doing it wrong and that i need to have a 2 day split workout and go to the gym 4 times a week ( i.e. doing the same workout twice a week), focusing more on my core and doing compound movements. He told me to do 5 sets of each respective machine with a 3 minute rest in-between. is this the best weight routine for a skinny guy to get bigger? or do i revert to my old ways and tell my instructor you are doing it wrong?

compound excercises are the way to go, not sure about the two day split thing tho,

At your weight, anything you do will yield results. Your instructor has the better idea with the routine, sans the machine parts. (Unless you're just starting out, the perhaps machines would be good to learn about different lifts. But free weights are definitely the way to go.)

Free weight not only work the large main muscles but they also make you use smaller stabalizer miscles. You basically get more bang for your buck with free weights compared to machines.

OP here - point taken about the free weights, but what about 3 minute rest periods? seems ridiculously long to me, also what rep ranges to do?

if you're not in highschool, just do a starting strength program. Either Starting Strength or Stronglifts. Google them, or just lurk moar.

if he had you on machines to bulkup i wouldn't listen to much he says, although compound movements like deadlifts and squats are excellent for bulking. 3 minute rests do seem excessive, depends if you are going to failure with rep ranges.
