Anyone here on /fit/ ever tried Aikido? After reading about it on wikipedia it doesn't seem overly useful.

I guess I'd rather do some kinda mma or krav maga (I used to do some krav maga in the military) but there's nothing going on where I live.

Depends on your goal. Do you need to be able to beat the shit out of people? Do boxing, kickboxing.
Do you want a fun sport with a mental aspect and basic self-defense, do aikido.

I suppose you have a pretty good question as well as a point there.. I'm mostly interested in learning some self defence. I don't wanna beat the shit outta people as you put it. I'll just do some moar research. thanks

I took some Aikido classes. I was a little put off by how much they used spirituality, ritual and visualization. I was looking for martial art, ability and fitness; not a new outlook on life.

What really did me in was after about four weeks, they had a real sparring session after class. One guy, the most advanced person in the class ("Aikidoku," I think), acted as 'guy being attacked' and everyone else was 'gang attacking guy.' Except they all came at him one at a time. And no matter how they came at him, he basically used the same move over and over to deflect their attacks. I thought, that's an effective move! but boring. Or maybe these people just don't know how to get a guy in a fight. Either way, I quit shortly after.

I'd say that all medium-to-close martial arts are useful. I was doing aikido a while ago. Now I'm going to do aikido and kickboxing.
