So fit, college freshman here- I've been working out 5x a week for the last three months. I didn't lift at all before coming to school, so I'm still very new.

I'm happy with my routine- getting some nice results in broader shoulders, more defined abs, thicker legs, but as it is, I can't bench press for shit.

I curl with 35lbs dumbbells, overhead press 125, but I can only bench about 80lbs with the barbell. I can do 50lbs dumbbells though. Is dumbbell benching less beneficial than barbell benching?

Also, any other tips in general? Thanks fit.

Dumbbells are better if you are working out alone.
And dumbbells are better because you will use the same force in both pecs/arms, when you lift with the barbell most of the time people utilize of side more than the other.

Overhead pressing 125, dumbbell bench pressing 50s but only being able to barbell 80lbs is completely backwards. Your muscle groups are horribly improportionate.

All you can do is continue lifting and over time your weaker muscles will catch up.

In general: Buy "Starting Strength" by Rippetoe.

Workout 3x per week.
For your bench:
Monday:
45 x 5 x 2
55 x 5 x 1
65 x 3 x 1
75 x 2 x 1
80 x 3 x 5.
Do the same thing on Friday.
Keep doing it until you can bench 80 for 3 x 5 (15 times).
Then add 5 pounds to the last set. etc.

Work out w/ 85 pounds until you can do it for 15 times.
Then add 5 more pounds. As you move up the max, move up the weight on the starting warm up sets.
