Belly fat.

This is probably a fairly common question to /fit/ but chances are, I'm blind and never have seen it, or I don't come on here enough to catch it.

Belly fat. It's not like I'm 400 pounds. I'm 5'8", 135. I used to smoke, and quit this year, and ever since I quit, I've gained weight. I guess I gained an appetite, when everything didn't taste like an ash tray.

So, I'm fairly healthy, I try to walk to and from work almost every day. I ride a bike a few times a week, and both of these things are about 3 miles each time that I do it. So, nothing heavy, but I'm not just sitting around on my ass. I work two jobs, and find little time to do anything outside of them.

However, I've got enough belly fat that it bothers me. I've always had a flat stomach and getting older and gaining weight is a terrifying experience.

Seriously, what the hell works for getting rid of belly fat? Sit ups have failed me. Walking and biking doesn't cut it. I can't run because of a bad hip. Now what?

Pic related, but it's not me.

And I so would get into more exercise, with more time off. It just seems that I'm not even getting enough sleep.

>>Ever considered swimming?
I used to swim a lot. I was on the swim team when I was younger. But since the whole smoking thing, my lungs are just shit, and I can't seem to get my heart rate up to what I would want it to be.
>>- Epiliptical
My parents own one, and I used it, and I think that is what fucked my hip up worse. I tried adjusting it, but that just didn't work either. :<
>> - Kickboxing (hardcore)
Think this is something they offer at a gym?
Thinking about moving in a few months, and want to join a gym there.
>>Also, how's your diet?
I probably don't eat as healthy as I should, because there is little time in my day. I live in the middle of nowhere, so fresh fruits and vegetables go bad about as fast as I buy them. :/ I don't pay much attention to carbs, or calories, but I don't just eat junk food and drink soda all day. I know that my calorie intake has definitely increased dramatically since I quit smoking 9 months ago.

Already experiencing this problem, so I wasn't sure.

Oh gee, thanks for the enlightenment. I feel truly honored.

Your problem is diet. Exercise isn't going to magically work if you're eating too much. If you have problems keeping fruits and vegetables fresh, buy frozen. You have no excuse.

Basic diet and cardio are all you need here to lose the belly fat. Start planning your diet, take your pick of healthy foods from the link below:
http://www.whfoods.com/foodstoc.php

Other mis/fit/s should be able to offer up better advise on servings and calorie intake, I'm not well versed on that subject.

All right,

Post the following:

- Age
- Sex (makes a difference)
- Approx. height, weight
- Favorite foods
- A little summary of your eating habits to the best of your knowledge (favorite foods, favorite time to eat in the day, etc...)

Post the above I'll get you started with something.

Limited time is an excuse. When you work 14 hours of the day, and sleep 8 of the remainder. But thanks for the advice.
>>284410
I'll give it a look.
Is this something that you do yourself?

Do you not buy food? What does limited time have to do with what I suggested? I said if you can't keep fruits and vegetables fresh, buy frozen.

- 23
- Female
- 5'8" 135 pounds last time I checked. That's 20 lbs more than I was at 9 months ago.
- I love red meat and chicken the most. I don't touch pork, unless that is all that is there to eat. (A lot of times, supper is served at work, and there isn't another choice) I like salad, but probably use too much dressing. I eat a lot of soup, and love juices, and drink a lot of milk.
- In the morning, I eat at work generally.
Breakfast is usually either cereal (nothing real sugary, generally Special K or Cheerios) or somethings we'll have toast with peanut butter, or pancakes or frozen waffles.
At lunch, it's variable. It just depends on where I am, and what I have time for. Lately, it's been Hot Pockets. Don't know if it makes a difference if they're "lean", but yeah.
Dinner is variable too. Tonight it was Pigs in a Blanket, which, I hate, but had little choice of anything else. It's work, and you eat what's made, or you bring your own. Hmmm. We do use Hamburger Helper on almost a weekly basis. Casseroles in general. Not sure if those are healthy or not.

Are you supposed to completely cut pizza and things like that out of your diet, if you have a problem with building fat on the mid section? And, is it all about diet? Does stress have anything at all to do with it?

Limited time means, I don't have time to cook anything for myself. It means, I mostly eat at my job, which meals are prepared by another staff person. I would probably prefer to bring things I would like to eat instead, but it's also much cheaper for me to just eat with them, instead of going out of my way to buy things to eat by myself.

White rice isn't exactly terrible but if there is a slightly healthier but affordable option, which brown rice is, then take the brown rice.

Personally, is this the same practice you guys follow?

That was a serious answer. Yes, you will have to make sacrifices. The other mis/fit/ already pointed you to the sugar limit.

You don't have to choose a Spartan lifestyle if you want to lose weight.

OP, look for recipes that don't involve using sugar very much/at all, and go with that. When you eat out, try to limit how much sugar you have in tea/coffee/whatever, and then re-introduce sugar after a few weeks of limiting it. You'll find that just a little gives you the taste that you're used to, and you'll appreciate it a lot more.

You don't have to give up sweets and treats forever, you just have to let your pallet reset, so to speak, so that when you treat yourself your body reacts in a way that indicates that it's being given a rare treat, not placated to avoid trouble.

I did this with soda. I stopped drinking for a few weeks, and now I have about one every day or so. I really enjoy the soda, so I'm happy, and my consumption is limited, so I'm in better shape. The point is to get yourself in a cycle where you're still indulging as much as you want, but what you want (or rather what your body expects) is less than what it is now. We've developed huge tolerances to comfort food over the years, so it's understandable that it takes more and more to feel good.
