'Modern' bodybuilding is based on the notion that you must increase IGF1, and thus insulin, to grow. However, adults are meant to put on lean mass with growth hormone. Insulin is a growth hormone antagonist. Thus, it is best to eat low carb -preferably paleo - and do your hardest workouts in a fasted state. It works for me - I have a serious back injury but even I can gain mass this way and stay really, really lean. Don't believe me? Google up pics of some papua new guinea natives.
