same thing. they are just exercises that use multiple large groups of muscles to complete a lift.
example: compound/complex lift - squats. they use quads, glutes and hamstrings to lift, lats, erector spinae and abdominus rectus to stabilize the weight (that's why squats give you goods abs and a solid back).
the opposite is an isolation exercise: curls : works biceps only. and if you cheat on curls (if you keep your elbow locked and don't bring the weight completely back down) you only hit one of the two bicep heads.
