i had 10x better and bigger legs just from commuting to work on my fixed gear bicycle.

probably put about 80 years of wear on my knees but the sexy legs are so much more worth it.

i've got legs a little bit muscleyer than that and I don't do squatz ever either. I run maybe 2.5mi 4dy/wk and that's it.

I suppose I've been blessed with good genes--I can build muscle fast and it takes a long ass time of doing nothing for me to loose it. If I hit a plateau I take a few weeks off. When I return, typically day 1 or day 2 I break through the plateau.
