The best way to detox is to just stop smoking and drinking. Here's a little Q&A with Charles Poliquin about detoxing

"The Truth About "Cleansing"

Q: Every time I hear about "cleansing" protocols my bullshit meter goes crazy. My girlfriend insisted on trying a lemonade and sea salt fast recently for cleansing and she passed out after a few days. Is there any good cleansing program out there?

A: A cleanse was a great idea... a hundred years ago. The reason is, the average American today has to detoxify 500 chemicals a day. So a cleanse was a better idea when there wasn't so much pollution around.

One phase of detoxification is in the liver and one phase is in the kidneys. This is known as phase 1 and phase 2 detoxification. You need rich nutrient reserves before you do any kind of detoxification program.

Most people don't have enough nutrients in their bodies, so as they detoxify they actually get very toxic! Since they're also consuming low calories on their cleanse, the fat cells dump the toxins as they burn them.

So, basically, people today get more toxic because of the cleanse. They have to get rid of all that stuff, so they actually get worse from the detox. It's easy to make yourself sick with a cleanse.

Finally, unless you have a genomic profile done, you should never do a cleanse. You need to know which enzymes you have. You also need to have a comprehensive metabolic profile done so you'll know what it is you need to detoxify. For example, if you have toxic levels of aluminum in your body, the only thing that pulls it out is magnesium malate.

You need to know what poison you have in your body so you'll know how to get rid of it. You can't do that with generic, unregulated, over-the-counter "detox" supplements.

In short, if you're going to do a cleanse, only do it under the supervision of a well-trained functional medicine doctor. Otherwise you could do something very bad for your health."

greatest comment i've ever read

this is what i did once, i noticed a huge difference in how i felt, and i hadnt even been drinking or smoking regularly beforehand.

multivitamins, lots of water, and nothing else for 24 hours. then eat very clean for a week, like REALLY clean, no processed carbs/fats or anything. repeat 3x.

you WILL feel the difference.

The whole concept of "detox" is over-hyped bullshit.

Read what actual scientists have to say, rather than some lunkhead "fitness expert":

The "DIFFERENCE" IS THAT YOU START EATING HEALTHY

NOT BECAUSE OF SOME FUCKING MAGICAL CLEANSING EFFECT.

Poliquin IS a scientist, lunkhead. He's also the most successful S&C coach to have ever lived.

i did some heavy drinking this year, going out with two unemployed friends almost every day. i was happy to spend time with them but i wanted to cut down on the booze, because it fucked up my diet/workouts. so i eventually stopped seeing them.

now i spend most of my days playing bass, reading and walking with one of them, while the other one is still unemployed and doing drugs with some new friends she met on the bar.

i still have a social life and the ocasional couple of beers/cocktails (somewhat weekly). just cut down your drinking and the detox comes by itself. i know i feel better now than six months ago.

He's not a scientist, silly. He's got a BSc in Kinesiology and a master's in Exercise Physiology. He's basically a glorified physio, with no relevant expertise in the topic at hand.

A point proven by the fact he contradicts what the proper scientists in the link I posted are saying. They're professors of nutrition, toxicology etc. at respected universities so they know what they're talking about, even though they might be shit when it comes to shouting pump-up slogans to a sprinter.

i wanna say water

this is the truth, he also talks about how you need a medical screen beforehand to know what toxins are in the body and what methods to use to flush them out.

its not as simple as just drinking lemonade for a few days. detox is never a good idea

poliquin is overall superior to lab scientists on this topic in the wholistic sense.

when it comes down to results.
top field > top lab
as field is often 5-10 years ahead of lab work, due to inherent aspects of research

and GUESS WHAT, i'm a lab guy (not a field guy), worked in an exerc. physiology lab @ Uni and will be doing the same for my MSc. thats how it is, and other lab/scientists would agree.

Water. Drink it.

You don't need to detox. Just stop doing smoking and drinking excessively, and you'll be better. It will be gradual and hard to notice rather than some kind of magical reboot, but that's life for you. Improvement is hard to spot—work on your patience instead of groping for a quick change.
