your av node is supposed to act like a hard limit on ventricular rate since it can only conduct so fast (a normal node i think caps out at 200bpm), so if you're getting over that, you may want to see a cardiologist
a resting heart rate of 80-90 isn't bad--upper range of normal really ("sick" people can have resting heart rates well over 100bpm), though it is a bit odd if you're reasonably athletic. that's not really a cause of concern in and of itself, but chest pains during workout is, assuming you're not trying to sprint marathons or anything like that. tell your doctors that you have chest pain upon exertion, and they can give you a stress test where they basically have you run on a treadmill while monitoring your heart's electrical activity
high resting heart rate could also be an endocrine problem, but there would be other signs of that too
