It depends on the martial art, but more importantly, it depends on the dojo and teaching style. I practice Kung Fu where we do lengthy, quite exhausting cardio warm-up exercises, and Capoeira, where the warm-ups are shorter, but where the moves require a lot of upper body strength. Thanks to both styles, I've lost a fair amount of weight and my muscles are showing a fair amount of definition.
