Liquor by itself shouldn't have much sugar. It's the fru-fru mixed drinks you need to be careful of, that way. Generally it's not sugar that's making you ill so much as the aldehydes, ketones, higher alcohols and other by-products of fermentation. If that's a concern, stick to vodka, and drink it neat. And never EVER mix or chase liquor with anything carbonated.
NyQuil has a pile of medications in it, and (these days) very little alcohol. I'd suspect one of the pharmaceutical ingredients is making you ill. Just don't mix drinks with it and you should be okay.
