depends if you have high/normal/low arches. if like me you have high arches then too much arch support makes you turn your ankle (outwards). get the right sort for your foot type. asics are very good even if they don't look the best

I find flat shoos always have more of a loose fit, making them awkward for running even if they're more comfortable for regular wear and walking.

Yeah but he's talking about variations in proper running shoes, you can get shoes that look identical externally but are structured differently internally depending on your foot type. It's important to get the right sort otherwise you can cause knee and ankle damage if you get something that is completely unsuited.
