Hay guys,

I don't really understand this maintenance calories thing...pic is my food and exercise for the day - according to the list, it seems like I should be falling over from lack of calories today?

Although I ate ~ 1700 calories from food today, I played almost 2 hours of hard squash.

I am 5'11 and ~ 164 lbs

Your thoughts please.

Cheers,

Not the OP here, but I've started exercising and eating healthy lately, and I've been getting confused. I'm a huge fat guy (315 as of an hour ago), but I've never really eaten that much. Just what I was eating was extremely, terribly unhealthy, and followed by half a dozen cans of Dr. Pepper. Followed by a day of sitting around.

So, anyway, now that I'm exercising every day and trying to eat healthy, I only eat about as much as what's in the OP's image here (but with more carbs--I work at a bakery). Much more than that and I just feel like I'm stuffing myself to the point that I'm eating when I'm not even hungry just to get more calories.

Aaand the calculator at http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm is telling me my extreme weight loss calorie minimum is 2520.

So, what the hell? Should it really be necessary to just stuff myself when I'm not even hungry?

OP your body's basal metabolic rate is variable. The number is what you should aim for on an average day. When the body detects that food is becoming scarce it lowers the metabolism.

That's why you can go months without food, because the body burns less and less energy to make you last longer

Do I even have to say it?

Calculators usually overestimate calorie needs for obese people. you don't have to 'stuff yourself'

Yeah, yeah. I've given up the Dr. Pepper, too.

Any idea how much it overestimates? I asked once before, and I was told that although the real number would be lower, it really wouldn't be all that much lower. Was that guy full of shit?

You're better off learning what foods are good to eat, what foods are bad to eat, then just ditching the calorie calculator shit.

Once you restrict yourself to only good foods, the only thing you need to know is to eat only when you're hungry, eat relatively slowly, and eat until you're not hungry anymore. There is a difference between "not hungry" and "god damn I'm full". If you eat too quickly, you will be more likely to overeat past the "not hungry" stage into the "full" stage. Once you have those two things figured out, healthy weight loss is simply a matter of being as active as you can. You should do a MINIMUM of 30 minutes of cardio at a time in order to see any fat loss.
