DDR, when combined with good nutritional habits and other forms of exercise, can help you lose weight to a certain extent but its not a magic fat loss machine.
I've done workout mode and for my weight (148) I burn 10-30 calories per song, Heavy and Challenge songs. Figure 2 mins per song and selection, and you've got 300-900 calories per hour. Substantial, but not as good as elliptical machines, rowing machine, or just good ol' jogging.
tl;dr: Good as a supplement but not the best
