your top 5 fitness/health sites Anonymous
i want to see what everyone is reading on a daily basis in terms of fitness and health in general (in order of greatest importance to me at least, which means if i had to choose which site to be brought down the first would be the last, got it?)

1. www.mtnathlete.com
2. www.gymjones.com
3. www.theiflife.com/
4. www.marksdailyapple.com
5. www.cathletics.com

i read about 5-6 other nutrition blogs/sites, and also a few other training sites. i believe i spend about 3 hours a day reading this stuff. hell it beats video games/television

Threadjack: your top 5 serious fitness books

I'm looking for books about the underlying theories of sports performance and programming for them. I need to understand in greater detail how the aforementioned works before I begin my internship in the spring semester.

what kind of internship?

how have you landed said internship without yet knowing >theories of sports performance and programming?

not being critical, just interested, as normally one proves qualification BEFORE being accepted into internship/employment

i'll throw you a bone. these are the texts that i was searching for today. As of no surprise, the top 12 university in the country that i was @ did not have them, or even recognize they exist within the inter lib loan system across the US

Science of Sports Training, Thomas Kurtz 2001 Stadion Publishing

Strength and Power In Sport, P.V. Komi 1996. Blackwell Science Ltd.

Explosive power and jumping ability for all sports T. Starzynski, H. Sozanski 1999.

"The Snatch, the Clean And Jerk" R.A. Roman

"Weightlifting and Training Technique" Ilya Pavlovich Zhekov

Lol haven't gotten it yet, I'm chasing down a few leads right now, the actual internship itself will be 400 required hours by the end of May. I'm a senior in exercise science, although the last few semesters have had a disturbing focus on organizational management, so I don't feel like I'm prepared enough for some of the places I'm applying to, kind of freaking out ya know. I know all the basics well enough, but not enough on programming methods and S&C. If all else comes to naught, I'll just settle for running coffee errands or sitting around bored in a parks and rec job.

Almost forgot, thanks for the books man, I'm definitely going to get them.

what university are you currently in? almost all proper S&C is done 'outside' of the cirric. during my undergrad years, the D1A treated the Exercise phys students like godamn lepers. and for good reason. the vast majority of exerc science/kines what have you know little more than a personal trainer....

George Mason down in Virginia. Lol we most definitely are the lepers of the uni. We're a commuter school, and the university is divied into 3 campuses. They stuck the exer. sce. and related programs out in the middle of bumfuck Prince William county; most students come from Fairfax Co. which is 20-30 miles away. Anyways, I'm kind of glad to see Mason is like other universities in the lack of S&C aspect, been wondering why there's been only 3 courses related to exercise and 7 courses devoted to business and management the past couple semesters.

I see you're a CSCS, would I be right in guessing that studying for that is where you pick up most of your practical knowledge?

yes and no

general knowledge that the 'system' uses. sure.

but i can honestly tell you this, the very nature of the US system is dysfunctional, and i never practice any aspect of it. the CSCS is just top aspect of the NSCA, they have minimal competition and no desire to improve. LOL, just read their S and C journals.

So thankfully, no, i did not learn what i know from attaining the CSCS, it was another silly test that cost me 100s of dollars just so i can have another title of letters behind my name. that and the fact it will make me more 'appealing' when i go for the MSc. in exerc. phys.

not to sound trite, but you learn by doing, and by doing with the best in the business.

example: http://www.powerdevelopmentinc.com/index.php?cat=2
you will learn more reading everything Smith has on this site than 4 years of Exerc Phys or any silly 'certification'
also, Poliquin. other than a Master's, thats the only 'cert' i'd truly respect in the field.

I see, I've read some Poliquin, but not Smith, or most of those other guys in your link.

Thanks, I've learned a lot tonite. Time to hit the sack though, but see you around here sometime.
