cutler and coleman are fucking enormous men to begin with. they also take a lot of steroids and have bloated growth-hormone guts, which is probably what you're mistaking for huge abs; their stomachs are distended.
if you're adding resistance to ab movements then most of the work is being done by the hip flexors. there are only a couple of ways to isolate the abs proper and according poliquin they permenantly plateau after six weeks.
what's more, the rest of your post is not correct. different muscles respond to different stimuli differently, due to different purposes and fibre types. abs are postural muscles and respond to a wide range of stimuli. so both approaches will actually work.
