MILK! Anonymous
Ok lifters--who here is on the milk bandwagon? I keep hearing about guys drinking up to a gallon of milk per day to increase calorie intake to build muscle. Anyone out there think this is a fuck-all stupid idea? The reasoning behind it is that a lot of new people to training can't eat the amount of whole foods to get their calorie intakes up--but by drinking milk they can increase calories with an easy drink that already has fats, carbs, and protein in the right proportions.

tldr: Does drinking lots of milk help build muscle?

OP--
My problem has been that I work out like an animal all the time--but i'm not seeing much results in size. My strength has gone up quite a bit--but I think that my small size is hampering my strength gains. I'm 5ft 11in and i weigh around 165--but I have a small frame. Is upping my calorie intake going to help add muscle while working out?

Drink a full gallon of milk in one sitting and get ready for a barf of which the likes you have not seen before.

"Soy milk is essentially Coffee-Mate with laced with estrogen, and is best left to vegans and other socialist vegetarian types that can't bring themselves to eat the completely natural-for-humans flesh of our friends the Animals but who have no trouble with slaughtering trillions of our other friends the Plants and processing -- in gigantic factories run by multinational corporations with shareholders that eat meat themselves -- very selectively chosen components of their poor little bodies into gooey shit that humans have never had an opportunity to adapt to digesting. Why, eating such material, with its high levels of isoflavones, touted by gynecologists as tantamount to Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT), will make you grow boobs, and this will screw up the clean lines of this fine young man's Under Armor. I recommend against it." - Mark Rippetoe

There is a reason for the routine known as "milk and squats"...

Not if you're throwing in some cardio days like you're supposed to.

OP, I'm your exact dimensions so I know your pain. I started at 135 and the only thing I gained was strength until I was able to lift hard enough to put on some decent muscle. Even now I'm not that impressive but it's a work in progress.

I drink about 3/4 of a gallon of whole milk a day and it's mostly for the protein, not calories. Milk is excellent for adding protein into your daily macro. Balance it out with whole grains (pasta, etc), necessary fats (like PB and Olive Oil) and meat (chicken, lean beef and fish) and you'll be seeing improvements in no time.

Aim for about 3500 calories a day for now, and 180g of protein.

Milk is fucking great. I drink a litre a day which is ~60grams of protein added to my intake easy.

True, and based on all the studies I've read the jury is still out. However, I did find enough studies indicating that soy isoflavones can greatly increase estrogen levels, while simultaneously suppressing testosterone. Being that I was regularly eating a lot of soy, and drinking soy milk, I decided the best course of action was to significantly reduce my intake until enough studies are performed to allay my concerns.

There's a reason that all other animals are weened off of milk at a certain age-- it isn't meant for adults. Continuing to consume it into adolescence will cause various health problems (poor skin, obesity, bad breath, et cetera).

hey does anybody know why ON whey tastes so fucking good? does isolate taste better than concentrate? or is it something else? any clue? anyone?

Ever think that maybe the reason no species drinks milk past adolescence is simply because such a species would not be viable? The mother has to eat twice the nutrients to feed the baby. She can't get these nutrients from drinking more milk from her own species. New food has to be brought into the equation somewhere.
