I've been doing sit-ups for almost 5 months, 3 times a week, and not seeing improvement. Mostly when doing them and afterwards, it's my knees and legs that ache more than my stomach...any clues as to what I'm doing wrong?

You can't spot reduce FFS. Your body will take fat equally from your body. Doing situps will improve your abs, but first you need to get rid of overall fat by doing real exercise aka weight lifting/running/etc

i see. the problem is i have a skinny build, and only this last year have I actually developed a gut of some sorts. I've been jogging about 6km every week, but i seem to be getting scrawny, not lean >_<

EVERYTHING. You don't get doing visible abs by doing crunches, you get them by lowering your bodyfat% to 10-12 or less.

Stop doing crunches, they're barely useful. Start eating better, doing cardio and lifting.

OP here

so basically fuck crunches and do cardio and weightlifting...got it

thanks for the advice guys!

dont forget hanging leg raises! nothing is better for strengthening your hip flexors and getting awesome hip lines

this x2

sitting at 11% BF and only do hang leg lifts for front abs, quick and rips the shit out of the core.

make sure they aren't static straight leg raises, those things can fuck with your lower back.... and they don't work as many things as non-static leg raises

Better but anon needs to stop saying don't do ab work...if you've seen the movie "American Psycho" do the sit-ups that he did until it hurts. If it doesn't hurt you're not destroying (therefore building) muscle. Just be sure to get a full range of motion not just a tiny bit or range.

no dont stop doing crunches at all they will develope your abdominals so that they are sculpted once you lose your gut. but you need to do other ab exercises also with the cruches. doing an ab routine is much more effective than doing just 1 exercises. try doin other stuff like sit ups, russian twists, dead man holds, ABC's, Leg lifts, weighted sit ups, and core bridges, and different crunch variations like reverse crunches & bent knee crunches. start by picking out a few of those exercises (i do 8 in a row for my ab routine) and do 20 reps of each exercise. then increase your reps by 5 per set each week until you feel like your reps are high enough. i caped out at 45 reps for all the crunch and lift exercises, and holding all the things like dead man holds and core bridges for 3 sets of 1 minute each. just try an ab routine like that and after a few months you have a sculpted 6 pack

Crunches help but doing them solely is pointless. Why? Because you are exercising only one part of your abs. You need to do alternate abs exercise if you want to see any progress there. Also eat a sandwich if you're lean.

still epic fail without a lower bf%

Ab work doesn't do shit for visible abs. What you call a "6 pack" are tendons, not muscles. The muscles are underneath, so if you keep doing sit-ups and you'll get more girth, you won't "sculpt" anything you moron.

Okay let's simplify this...do abwork that YOU feel will help you at different sports or things you do...i.e play basketball, soccer, climb trees? o_O?

Anyways, find an ab routine that helps you do those activities and stop worrying about developing "visible" six packs...that will come naturally if you stop worrying so much about it -_-'
