I've always gotten cramps in my abdominal area near my stomach for as long as I can remember, and they've always been caused by walking/running too much.

Up till now this hasn't been much of a problem because I've always been a couch potato, but I recently started working out, including doing a 2 mile run every other day. I find, though, that I do more walking than running because the cramp puts me in a lot of pain.

tl;dr
What precautions can I take to fight off cramps?

Pic related, I think. I just googled cramp and took the first image.

water....lots of water

Don't eat or drink for a few hours before you run...

Might be easier to just wake up early and run in the morning.

Yeh, water pretty much. Also you might be sweating too much and so your body does not have enough sodium.

Make sure to take deep full breaths as you exercise.

Whenever I get side stiches I can relieve some of the pain by slowing down a bit, breathing slowly yet fully, and stretching the side that is in pain.
