/fit/, halp. First off, I'm underageb&, but still, I assume you guys will help me a little as long as it's helping someone become nice and fit again. Anyway, about late January, I started to lower my calorie intake while doing my treadmill everyday. I eventually did more and more, and I now do 60 minutes. However, my legs just hurt so much that I can't run well. I mean, in 60 minutes, I can only do like 4 miles, which is terrible.

I've gone from 196 to right now, about 169, and are 5'3.5". I have noticed I have made progress since the beginning, like jogging (5 mph) half a mile. Before, I could never do that. But, listening to other kids at school talk about running and you guys, I get pretty discouraged. Like when I get tired, I can barely breathe to take in good air, but when I'm finally good again, my legs still hurt like hell. Will this eventually improve as I lose weight? Could I, one day, run a mile in less than 8 minutes (which is apparently still slow, according to many, but would be huge for me). I can barely do one in 14 minutes now... :(

What? Can you? Of course you can unless you're limited by a disease or something like that. Just keep on truckin' and keep working hard and you WILL be able to reach your goals.

Agreed.
Also, ice and stretch your legs if they hurt.

do you have a deviated septum? that may affect your breathing. and you shouldn't really run more than a few times a week.

Hm? I don't believe so. I'm sure I have trouble breathing with fat around my lungs or perhaps small lungs from never using them (I have never played a sport or done anything in my life). Also, I do it everyday. I don't really run, it's more of a fast walk (3.5 mph).

Sounds like you've over trained. A few (3 or more) days of complete rest could do you good. When you start again, make sure not to push yourself past the point where your performance begins to suffer. You need rest. The old saying that the best runners have a lazy streak has some truth to it.

I wouldn't listen to anything the tards at school say. When I was in highschool gym class it was common knowledge we were going to start weightlifting at the second semester, for months I listened to idiots talk about how much they could lift - when we finally got to the the weight room hardly any of them could lift 65% of what they claimed they could. Even the strongest dude there who claimed he could lift 200 could only lift 140lbs.

When I first started running my leg muscles were killing me but I decided to run it off. the next day I couldnt walk properly. you should rest, the damaged muscles in your legs will heal and become stronger and eventually no pain.

however, if its your joints that are giving you pain stop running and do eliptical low impact excersise. you can be too fat to run

i would advise you to find a personal trainer or go to a running shop with a gait machine... it seems to me that it could be your posture and/or incorrect footwear -do you over pronate? do you know? are your shoes stablising you enough? don't know? find a running store with a gait machine and get checked out NOW!!

go and ask for advice from a trained professional, they will help you up your running.

ALSO, only the top elite athletes can run a mile in less that 8 minutes so I wouldn't bother aiming for that. Try to get it down the 'army' level - ie, 10 mintues, comfortable pace and being able to hold a semi decent converstation during that time.

GET NEW SHOES

btw, your shoes should be replaced every 500 miles, and you should alertnate between two pairs- also make sure you're running with RUNNING shoes or trainers with shock absorbers in the heel (like an air pad) - NOT TRAIL or ENDURANCE shoes

Wow. Are you sure about that? I don't want to make it worse on op (though it looks like he's got a few things to try) but when I was in highschool a few years back anything over 10min was god awful.

I remember coming in at 13min, and being like the only one except for an xboxHUEG fatty or two. I took a few more PE classes and eventually came around 9-10min (weighing like 230lbs), and I was happy about it just because I wasn't the one everyone was watching after they finished (though I was still at the very end of the pack).

I suppose a few were in track, but still. 7-8min seemed to be the norm.

It's nice to think I wasn't doing so badly, but I'm not sure if I'm convinced

Uhm you'd only strive for 10 minutes a mile when doing a lot of them. 8 minutes is average time for a mile if that's all your doing, because you don't have to pace yourself.

the top elite athletes can do a mile in 4-5 minutes, I think.

If you were actually running as opposed to jogging, your heel shouldn't touch the ground. Running is done on the front of the feet, using the tendons of the ankle as a spring.

4 minute miles are the goal for top runners. Marathoners do around 5 minutes miles for 2 hours.

If your legs hurt often, stretch them out throughout the day.

And warm up and cool down laps are pretty important so make sure you do that every time you run.

Warm ups are pretty important with any exercise you do.

Anyways, it sounds to me that you've made some progress so far. Going from not being able to jog for 5 minutes to running non-stop for 60 minutes sounds like fukken progress to me.

keep doing what you're doing, it WILL happen one day if you keep being as consistent as you have been

err, no, he said that he walks for 60 minutes and can jog for half a mile... I'm sure you can do more than 4 miles in 60 minutes if you were jogging the entire time.

8 minutes for a mile isn't that fast
most people are able to get there

Yeah 8 minutes is a piece of cake. Try 5 minutes and then that would be a true statement.
