Your body adapts to the kind of exercise you do. If you keep running at a slow pace (aerobic) for long periods/distances, it adapts to conserve energy so that you'll be able to endure those long sessions.
If you do something like HIIT (anaerobic) your body adapts to expend calories rapidly, to fuel your intense activities.
tldr aerobic cardio trains your body to be efficient with energy (BAD).
