I just started a program of full-body workout 3x a week based on what I read on this site:

Basically, they claim that beginners should only do 1 set (plus a warm-up set) of every muscle group, every other day, to prevent overtraining. Increase weight next time if you can do 12 or more reps in that set. They even have a nice little excel spreadsheet for you to fill out.

I'm pretty much the same as OP, 6', 165. Skinny looking, but basically just bone and fat.
