It really depends on where you buy them. I have a tom thumb and a kroger close by, the Kroger sells a carton of egg whites for $1.70, and the Tom Thumb sells them for like $3.50, becuase they're a name brand.
I still eat yolks, I just eat a lot more whites. It's more cost effective in the long run for me to buy just the whites, and I don't end up wasting food.
As far as OP's question is concerned, you CAN drink them, but there's a debate as to whether or not it's completely safe in large quantities. The egg whites you see in stores are low heat pasteurized to kill bacteria, but the jury is still out on whether or not it's enough heat to totally neutralize the adine found in the whites. If you were to drink enough of the whites without neutralizing the adine, you can suffer from a biotin deficiency, which is a serious medical problem. Even if the Adine wasn't neutralized, you would still need to drink alot of the fuckers, but some bodybuilders do.
The low heat pasteurized egg whites that come in the cartons can be consumed as is, or they can be cooked like normal eggs.
You can also cook egg whites straight out of an egg by separating them from the yolks using the shell, or you can hard boil them.
