(i dont reccomend this on a daily basis, but you have to sweat a lot for good cardio) I suggest jogging for about 20 minutes at 5.5-6 mph and then walking at about 3.7 or 3.8 at an incline of 3.5 for the rest of the 40 minutes. This gives you a good variation.
As too your upper legs, stretch more, and if it keeps persisting, take a day off. It never hurts to take a breather.
