Actually, they'll get worse. Even with it parallel your strong arm will compensate, and will get bigger faster than the weak arm. By isolating, you can force yourself to do the same reps with each arm. You can do the weak arm first, then limit what you do with the strong arm, or you can do the strong arm first, and then assist the later reps on the weak arm so it can do the same amount. My quads were over an inch different, so I started doing split squats and isolated leg extensions, and got them down to a quarter inch difference. You need to isolate.
