How long should it take for the typical human body to return to normal after donating blood? I gave two days ago, and I am just a swampy bog of gasping sweat after a simple morning lawn-mowing.

I should probably add that, while I'm not the fittest cat around, I AM within my BMI index (roughly 150 - 160 pounds at around 5'8).

It usually takes me two weeks to feel completely back up to snuff. But one week is typically all I need to feel decently strong again on my bike. I donate every 11 weeks, btw.

It'll take a couple of days to a week for your body to replenish its hemoglobin/iron/fluid, so you'll just have to sweat it out.
You'll recover faster if you work on some stamina and mind some extra iron/fluid intake which your body'll need to restore.
And you can try donating blood-plasma only, since they'll pump the stuff they don't need straight back into your veins.

I meant to add that I usually get a nice bump after two weeks. It seems like my body briefly overcompensates with the RBC production. So, three weeks after donating, I feel stronger (for a short time) than I did immediately before donating.

Any suggestions for getting back in shape, exercise/diet/lifestyle-wise? I just wanna be sure I'm not doing myself any harm should I choose to ignore the signals my body's giving me.

I give blood all the time because I have the universal type.
Everyone is different, but you should drink lots of fluid and hopefully you take vitamins... I take iron pills.
If you don't feel better soon I would contact the place you gave blood and let them know!

Usually it's no problem. Just give your body the time it needs to recover, it will reproduce the blood by itself. Iron pills might help, but usually are not needed. Don't freak out because of feeling weak, that's just normal. If it doesnt get better within like 10 days you can start to worry, but not before.

Ive been giving blood for about 5 years now and I'm back to normal the next day. never effected be in a bad way at all.

I give blood semi-regularly, but this particular donation just happened to be after I started making cursory efforts to improve my fitness. Seems like there's a fairly wide spectrum of recovery times, so me getting winded easily after day two apparently isn't much of a surprise. I don't take vitamin supplements, as I've considered my diet to be somewhat above-average (fruits, veggies, eggs, no junk... could use more meat though), though iron supplements make sense if I wanna get back into the swing of things sooner. Appreciate the input, folks.

Yeah, red wine helps replenish red blood cells because they're both red!

Plasma, you can give daily and be fine.
Whole blood they require you rest at least, 3 days.. so anytime now you should be fine. Could be a mental "omg I just gave blooooooood" thing too.
