Runner's high? Anonymous
So I was out running and from time to time, I just get pumped and run in a full out sprint. The kind where it doesn't even feel like you're running, and more like something is just pulling you ahead. It feels great, and I can only assume it's "runner's high". I just read an article that says that it takes a person an average of 20 to 30 miles to achieve it, but I don't run nearly that much and I feel I've achieved it.

What does /fit/ think about runner's high? (or lifter's high, sport high, whatever)

endorphins released to reward you you so you don't die running for your life

I think I got a runner's high one time after doing cardio. I went back to my dorm, and I was uncontrollably euphoric for a few minutes.

This isn't the runner's high, this is just something else. Runner's high is when you run for an hour or more straight and feel like you can just keep going on forever because your leg muscles just don't give a damn anymore and can't hurt any further.

Cool. Is this more common for someone in shape vs someone who is out of shape?

I mean, obviously the in shape people runmore often, but you get what I mean.

OP here, maybe I don't get it. I don't feel euphoric, it's more like I get a huge burst of energy and my body just goes into overdrive. I lift much heavier weights, and run far faster.

Would you call this a high?

that's adrenaline. the "runner's high" won't kick in until you've basically worked hard enough to damage yourself (endorphins are natural painkillers, ENDOgenic mORPHINe)

This. Nearly anyone can get a runner's high AFTER some steady state cardio, but second wind occurs during exercise. Wikipedia for a slightly better explanation.

I used to do quite a bit of running myself. On the return trip I would always sprint back home. Not too far about 1-2k's. I felt really euphoric I would run faster and faster trying to push myself. Sometimes I would run faster that what I think my body could handle it was quite scary.

Yes i done the same and at the final stretch it was downhill and i was going as fast as i possibly could. Felt fucking on top of the world at the end of it and my tendonitis flared up the next day, not so great. As far as i know for endorphine's to be released you need to push your body as far as you can, don't know about length of time it takes but i would assume say 10-15 mins of fast running is enough, i know what adrenaline feels like and what i experienced was not that.

I also used to do karate a year ago. I was going to be doing my 1st Dan. Back when I did karate some of the gradings (official tests) lasts about 4 hours. When did none stop exercise and sparing. That was the greatest thing in the world.

sigh. now I'm a unfit lazy shit.
