PSC: Tell us about your fitness routine.
Hank: I start by doing warm-up exercises... deep knee bends, head bobs, surfing in place...
Gradually I work up to bench-pressing my bookshelf.
Tweny minutes with a punching bag -this works the upper abs- followed by a cool down courtesy of Evian and an hour on the exercise bikes or the Nordic Track.
I like to pretend that the punching bag is my father. "Bam! Bam! Hello, Dad!"
I also like to do crunches while I'm typing. Most of my books were written in the weight room. You know that photo where I'm doing a handstand over my Macintosh Powerbook computer? That's actually how most of my recent poems were composed. When you're upside-down, all the blood rushes to your head.
Wrist weights are for sissies. When I work out, my arms are actually lashed to my computer. By the time you attach the zip drive, the modem and the printer, that thing weighs about 30 pounds.
Technology keeps me on the cutting edge.
Don't get me wrong, though. I'm not trying to be macho!
For me, keeping in peak physical condition is simply a matter of respecting yourself. Being physically fit is all about controlling your own fate.
