I have no experience with boxing, yet am interested in purchasing a punching bag.
Good or bad idea?
Any advice on technique?

Don't let the bag freeze. You'll be sad with broken wrist.

Different fighting styles have different punching techniques. I suggest doing some research and figuring out what style you want to do. Maybe put aside a hundred bucks or so and pay for a few boxing or martial arts lessons to get some formal training that you can use as a "ground floor" so you can be sure of what the correct technique is.

Bags are good for technique and building up calluses on your knuckles. Mediocre for bulking up or training, but hell if I don't love beating on a bag for an hour.

I'll assume you're right handed. Your stance should be your body facing to the forward right, your left foot forward and to the left, your right foot back so you're balanced. Arms to chest ready to block.

Left-hand jab
Right-hand cross
Both hand hook
Right-hand uppercut
Right-hand backfist

Then you can try your snap kicks, full roundhouses, back kicks, quick snaps, forward roundhouse, that sort of deal for your legs.

Well this is what I know. On the pic the bag is hanging too low. You'd do good remembering to always keep your guard up.Always.
And it's very good idea if you will use it a lot. Its good cardio.
Oh and unless you want to hurt your bones longterm wear wraps and gloves. Personally I like getting my knuckles bloody but that's not wise

Ideally get a friend who knows how to box to teach you the basics. I sparred against a guy who was 'self-trained' whose jabs hit harder than his crosses because he didn't know how to put his body weight behind the cross. And when he jabbed he'd jump forward with it looking like an idiot.

Problem is, I'd join a boxing gym, but since I'm a lawyer, I can't afford a broken nose or a concussed brain.
Is it common for boxing gyms to accept people who don't want to spar?

You'll wear a helmet and unless the guy running it is a fag/SUPER CEREAL they won't allow face shots. A hook to the head when wearing a padded helmet won't do much.

Go join a boxing gym.

You can spar with headgear on, or you can just explain your situation. Or just guard your face :)

this mans an idiot, you have your fists above your chin, a punch to the face causing a possible broken nose is more damaging than a punch to the chest

pay attention not to push the bag. I've seen lots of people that learned from tekken and movies punch the bag so that it starts swinging.

And wraps help keep your wrist straight.
I was taught to punch with my index and middle knucles(TKD) but to me that feels unnatural. So I opt for the middle, ring and pinky knuckle method until I learn how to land both the index and middle and not just that middle that is bigger than others. But if you gloves on it doesn't matter. Only that you keep wrist straight. And tension only on impact.

And yes. Someone from IRL should show you the ropes.

Lol. I thought that way too, until someone pushed my fists into my face. You put your hands at your upper chest, ready to block a face shot, but you don't keep them at your face.

k misfits, thx for the input.

At least its your fists not the other guys. I was taught to keep them right in front of my face. In front of eyes. Blocking my view except between mah arms.

I suppose that works if you're wearing 16oz padded gloves. I was taught to box barehanded, where a knuckle in the eye is a knuckle in the eye.

I did kickboxing for a couple of years, and if you wear headgear with big gloves, I've never seen anyone get fucked up. Also, you could just punch the gloves the instructor wears. whatever they are called.

Without any technique you'll only hurt yourself.
Boxing gloves are NOT for the bag, use bandages or fingerless gloves (like in MMA).
