Hi /fit/.

I'm 5'8", in the 160-170lb. range. I want to lose weight, but avoid growing muscle mass. I have a feminine face, so I look pig disgusting with muscles. I have an hour and a half a day to spare after work and class in my bedroom, maybe seven feet by four feet free space.. I eat mostly fruits, chicken soup, baloney or ham sandwiches and drink 1% milk and water. Six cans of soda a week, and either pizza or fast food once every other week. I figure doing 500 jumping jacks a night is retarded, so that's out. I've had a program called Yourself!fitness on my computer for a few months, but I never tried it. Should I, or do you have any better ideas?

Attached pic is my twin sister. I pretty much have her face, just a bit more in the cheeks, etc.

you're a girl i'm assuming, so lifting weights won't make you big to begin with. if you are seriously about changing body composition, you need to lift, period.

either that or take up hill running. preferably both.

Visible muscle is a function of how much you eat, not how much you lift. You should lift weights and do cardio (weight lifting can easily be done in the space you have, for cardio try walking or jump roping). Cut out the soda completely, switch to skim milk and drink lots and lots of water. Stop eating baloney, processed meat is worthless to you. Pizza or fast food every other week shouldn't hurt you to badly. Make sure you eat breakfast, and try to eat six small meals a day. I, for example, eat a breakfast of cereal and then two hours later have a wheat bagel. Then two hours later a sandwich, two hours later some fruit, two hours later a reasonable dinner (chicken or fish with vegies never hurt anyone) and then maybe yogurt and granola or something like that for desert. The point is, constantly eat.

Lifting weights and walking or jogging will really help. If you keep your calories down, you won't gain visible muscle. If you do gain visible muscle you don't like, just eat less or work out less and you won't have it anymore. The meals I listed are for my 2000 calorie diet, but for someone you're height, I'd recommend a 1200 calorie diet. By the way, you're at a healthy weight now, maybe a fraction over. All you need to lose is maybe 10 pounds, not much more.

only to a point. the reasons weights work is that the increase in tissue size requires a lot of energy to convert dietary protein into muscle tissue. you won't get the same sort of effect with high rep low stress work like press ups.

chin ups are fine though. if you do them properly, and most people don't because most people suck. so don't suck.

after a point you're going to have to look at getting access to equipment. ymcas are good and cheap usually, and you can hang out with all the boys. always a good thing.

There is a difference between having a gut and being at a healthy weight. If you want to get rid of the gut, you'll have to lose maybe 30 pounds. Maybe 40. Everything remains the same though. No weights? Everything around you is a weight. Use bottles of water, sandbags, your chair, I don't care. Or you could try body weight exercises, like the daily 16:

Well, you're on track with the fast food once every other week. You can still eat that stuff, but the time span between when you indulge on it should be massive. 1-2 times a month should be the max.

As other anons said, cut out the soda.

Get a work out calorie counter. So you can look at how many calories you're eating per day, and how many calories you're burning. Figure out the right amount of calories for your body to function and still lose weight.

I think the general consensus is about 10 calories for every pound. But some people will need more, and others less. For instance I have a hyper thyroid and I eat around 2100 calories a day just to stay 130 pounds.

My opinion? See a dietitian. They'll know more about what the appropriate amount of caloric intake is for you than anyone here and anyone trying to sell you a routine or diet.

The one thing that I think people don't realize with calorie counting is that once you've figured out what's the right amount for you, pretty soon after you wont need to count anymore because you'll be able to gauge it most of the time.

If you are serious about weight loss these guys are right, cut back on soda (if you must, DIET SODA!) and if you are anywhere near as lazy as me I have found the best way to drink more water is just keep a bottle / large glass within arms reach at all times.

If I start to feel thirsty I just reach for the bottle / glass because it's easier.
