So I'm looking to get into running. I went for a fast walk for half an hour today, then ran for four minutes.

One of my really fit swimmer friends suggested this for me:
Run for 2 minutes, walk for one. Repeat 10 times, each day for a week.
Run for 3 minutes, walk for one.
Run for 4 minutes, walk for one.
Run for 5 minutes, walk for one.
Take a week off

After that week start doing HIIT where you sprint for 30 seconds, then walk for 30.

What do you guys think? Sounds doable, and I'm probably going to start tomorrow.

it will likely fuck up your joints, but im not totally sure. whatever you do, wear the right clothes, get some running shoes for like 20 gbp (err, 40 dollars) or so, cheap ones. but normal skate shoes or whatever will fuck your feet up. and as you learn quickly, its not macho, it's stupid.

I used to play volleyball a lot, so I still have some decent nike's that I used/ use. Fuck running in skate shoes, terrible idea.
I'm hoping to run mostly on grass or something if I can, cause I know concrete is bad for my joints.

Hmm...is running in general going to fuck my joints or what?

I know a guy who's run his whole life. He was a teacher at my school and ran from 24 miles away sometimes. He ran almost every major marathon. He's had three knee surgeries at 62, but looks 40. So ya.

Running isn't the best thing for joints indeed, and it's not something really fun. Get some REAL running shoes, i once tried some old nike shoes i had since i didn't have any "real" runnign shoes on me, and men, i got some huge blisters (after 10km run). If i were you, i would just do long distance run like a few Kms. Don't forget to sarst slowly, once you pass the cap, you will see that you can go on for a long time...

yep, your joints benefit in (almost) no ways from running; it is one aspect of it that is not healthy. however, obviously, it is very much worth it. take stuff like cod liver oil, it helps your joints, and if they start hurting; get it checked out.

some advice i need - i run about a mile a day, what sort of improvement should i be looking at weekly, should i be running double? or furtheR? im running it in about 7 minutes, is this too quick? thanks.

It's too much and not enough at the same time. You shouldn't be running everyday for short distances cause this is doing you no good, or not as much as someone who's running long distance 2-3 times a week. Try running for 45min 2 to 3 times a week, but not more than that, cause then, say hello to knee surgery...

I'm just starting, so I don't want to just go out and try to run for 45 minutes straight, thus why I'm asking for starter advice.

Yeah. I wear them everywhere.

But I won't anymore.

Finally a smart anonymous who chances to see through the endurance running bullshit pinging around this board. HIIT is the best running routine you can do. What fucks your joints up are lots of repetitions of the same leg movement over and over again. Sprinting minimizes this and give your body an acute stress response to respond to instead of the slow grinding workout of jogging or other long-distance runs that usually just waste muscle and stress your joints/heart.

If you really want to be hardcore try the Tabata Protocol: 20 seconds all-out sprint, 10 seconds jog, for ten minutes.

i would disregard your friends suggestion and instead do HIIT training, high intensity interval training.

walk 3-5 minutes, then run balls out for 1-2 minutes, walk 3-5 minutes, run balls out 1-2 minutes. Repeat until you are dead tired.
