Hello /fit/, just looking for some advice.

After lurking on the boards for a while and reading up on things that should be, I've started my own workout regimen.

First, a bit about me:

Age: 22
Height: ~6'1''
Weight: ~210lbs. (15 stones)
Diet: Poor but improving.
Goal: Lose body fat but build muscle.

I found someone to work out with, and it makes it so much easier. I need to do more cardio though.
Questions:
- Lose weight first THEN build muscle? or build muscle while losing weight (yes muscle adds weight - but it'll burn fat)? Am I taking the wrong course to start by losing weight by building muscles? I was under the impression that muscles burn more calories, so I will keep them fairly low weight with lots of reps so as not to get huge muscularly, but enough muscle to help burn fat.

Unless you are a bodybuilder or excessively fat or thin you don't need to worry about bulking or cutting. Just work out hard, stronglifts and the like are good starting points, do cardio, and eat a little below maintence to loose weight or above to gain it. In fact don't worry about above or below just eat better and workout. It works.

-If you gain muscle you can burn more calories. In my experience gaining muscle has helped me loose fat. However if you start eating better and working out regularly your body will start to shed fat anyway so not that important in my opinion.
-You can eat at night just not much and low to no carbs. I like nuts or a glass of skim milk. Once you start eating less at night you will get used to it.
-Not that important unless you are an athlete trying for strength or speed or a bodybuilder. Just do both. I usually don't do them any where near the same time as I am too tired from one to do the other afterwards.
-I like whey not as a supplement but for a quick low carb meal if I am in a hurry or feeling lazy. After working out I am usually hungry and protein is what I want. The only stuff besides food I take are zinc and a multivitamin. I think most supplements are not required to get in decent shape.

As I said in the other post you don't need to go to ocd on supplements and other techniques to get in decent shape. The bulking and cutting and other advise will work but isn't required unless you are really serious about being an athlete or bodybuilding.

I was pretty much in the same spot you were about 4 months ago (Well I was 13.5 stone.. and allot more hair on my chest).

Weight training first (use that blubber to your advantage), cardio is a bitch as a fat fuck with skinny limbs. (Also allot of stress on your legs and you'll get sick of working out, you'll also see faster gains when weight training and that encouragement is what you need when starting off).
Weights for about a 3 week's, then I'd give serious cardio a go.

As for the eating, if you have trouble with eating habits, take up a body building diet (you'll get sick of eating before you feel like snacking).
6 Meals a day, constantly metabolizing. (This is where the whey comes in.. 3 of those meals will be whey and extra's).
If you live alone, throw all the crap out of the house.
(Sugar drinks, Sweets, Crisps, Etc).
If not and your friends/family like to scoff crap and you are ever tempted... Punch yourself in the gut, tubby bastard.

Water is a huge factor here, drink as much of the sodding stuff as you can, keep a pint glass around the house and just keep filling that fucker up and downing it (the water from the tap might taste alittle shit in your area, so you might wanna get a britta water filter or whatever floats your boat.)

Supplements are a matter of if you have the dosh to spend on em, (From personal experience, they help allot, but starting out, you might wanna go with just Whey and some Multivitamins).

I hope that helps... but really, don't worry about the weight right away and remember them Squatz n' Oatz.
