you're old enough when you can pick up the bar.

No such thing as too old. If you can still do it, go for it.

I know a bodybuilder nearing the age of 70 who still looks like a rhino.

Before the end of puberty is too young for it as it'll stunt your growth and you don't want to be shorter than your could have been. Too old... When your joints give out?

Is this proven or what? I wish someone could give a definite answer to this.

For the too young? Yes. I knew a guy in highschool who's body naturally generated too much creatine which made him built since first-school but made him a full foot shorter than he should have been.

When you're going through puberty you want your body to be concentrating on getting a bigger skeleton (etc). Bodybuilding would just distract from that. Exercise & sport, however, are good.

No scientific fact I can conjure up right now. Just a basic understanding of human biology and my own observations.

How do you explain Shaquille O'Neal and Arnold Schwarzenegger? They both started lifting in their teens and are 7'0 and 6'2, respectively.

The idea that a prepubescent should not lift weights comes from the misconception that they may crack or break an epithyseal or growth plate which occur at the end of long bones and is where lengthening of the bones occurs. This happened 6 times to a minor who lifts in the recent history of recorded medicine, and no evidence is shown that suggests a barbell was the cause of their injuries.

Also to help make this point null, olympic lifters miss out on valuable training years by not starting in their teens, before puberty, and god knows that these olympic athletes, especially from other countries, start that young and grap quite large, tall, and stronger than anyone posting on this board.

I have lots and lots of friends who have lifted heavy and still grown respectively in the height.

Though, if you do roids at a young age, then im sure it could fuck something up.

How do you prevent breaking these growth plates? Just by keeping proper form?
>> Anonymous
Oh yeah, and about age,

I think competive bodybuilding is okay from when youre 21 years old, any younger would just make small kids go into roids.

And the upper limit must be around 50-60 , because then it just doesn't look that pretty anymore.. though there will be some people who can keep a nice form at 70 years..

Yea, it doesn't really happen even with bad form. The only way i could really see it happening is being greedy with the weight.

during puberty you should not lift, until maybe 14 or so because the skeleton if growing and the joint/ligaments are weak, as someone else said. also, the pic is real, it's synthol oil, you can find videos of there dudes of youtube if you search synthol

you're wrong, they just can't lift heavy.

Their tendons and ligaments are too weak to lift heavy weight in the same way that a novice adult's are. They are only too weak for a weight that it to heavy.

true, any body weight exercise is fine. but even beside that point, no testosterone = fail at lifting for the most part. it's just safer and more productive to be active in sport or whatever until a teen then start lifting too if you want, but whatever, I'm sure most people will be fine if they start light and use proper form and such
