that's the simple way of looking at it.
Pretty much to gain muscle, find out what your maintenence calories are, which are how many calories your body should get per day, and add around 500 on. When you do this, it's called bulking. When doing this, you're likely to gain a little fat with it, but you can avoid the fat gain if you eat clean foods instead of shit.
To lose fat, go on a cut. Do this after you bulk since you'll have a little extra fat on you that you'd want to get off. To do this, simply eat less calories, and increase your cardio.
