Sup /fit/,

How soon do you have to have a protein shake after a workout? I usually have to drive home before I take my shake which takes about 15-20 minutes. Is that too much time or am I good? I heard about people taking their powder and a water bottle to the gym and chug them down the moment they're done their workout, so is this what I should be doing? Thanks.

It doesn't really matter, as long as you get it into you before you got to sleep that night.

within 45min is what I've always heard (for best results anyway)

The general rule is as soon as possible, so although immediately after is better, it probably won't make a noticeable difference.

I usually have one right when i get home, then i sip water for the remainder of the evening.

I've talked to many fitness professionals and they've all told me the same thing; there's a 20 minute window after your workout when your body is at a catabolic state, you should consume 25-50 grams of protein with about 30-80 grams of simple carbs (fast absorption) to kick your body into anabolic. I also reached the same conclusion through my own research.

Sounds pretty logical to me, though I'm not an expert.
You probably could close this window a little by drinking a sports drink for some quick carbs right after being done or during the exercise. That might save you the problem of taking all that other stuff to the gym.

Anyways, I doubt it will make much of a difference. 20 minutes should be fine.
