Is it a shin splint or just anterior compartment syndrome?

Get acquainted with rowing machines and ellipticals.

Or stop running so much.

IGNORE PAIN ITS THE WAY OF THE NINJA.

Do exercises to strengthen those muscles. For example, stand with the front halves of your feet on a step, and straighten up to your tiptoes repeatedly.

Also, ice and rest. Reduce your mileage or stop for a while until it goes away, and hopefully you'll be stronger when you start back.

I throughly stretch my leg muscles. Never had them ever since.

Do a few hundred toetaps before you go to sleep every night, I used to get nasty shinsplints from running but a week of toetaps and ice fixed it

Running on softer surfaces, like grass or a track, might help. If you're running on cement, a lot of the force is sent back to your legs.

Some people, such as my self, find it extremely difficult if not downright impossible to run through shinsplits. For example, I can ride a bike at high intensities for hours or climb a hundred floors on a stairmaster without tiring, but I can't run for more than 5 minutes or so due to shin splints, and attempting to do so is extremely dangerous. In cases like this you risk seriously and permanently damaging the muscle if you attempt to "man up" and run through the pain.

if you start to feel pain STOP IMMEDIATELY.
running through them won't help you at all.

Heh I always used to run through the pain... nothing serious ever happened but it didn't help me either. It's better to rest up and heal yourself before running again imo.

Like others have said, whatever you do don't fucking run on cement. That's just asking for it.

First, do what others have said in this thread and if you start to feel pain stop immediately. Running through shin splints can cause permanent damage.

However, there's one thing I can suggest trying: Run uphill. Most treadmills have an angle setting.. The change in angle of your feet hitting the ground may be enough so that your leg muscles don't twist as much and cause the shin splints in the first place.
