Is there any real benefit to being able to do 100 push-ups compared to 50? It doesn't really make you any stronger, does it?

No, at that point you're training muscular and metabolic endurance.
100 push ups? They're good for strengthening your shoulder/elbow joints to get out of a plateau for bench pressess.
