Sup /fit/

I'm planning on getting a road bike for exercise/fun, I'm 235 lbs, will this be an issue? also are padded bicycle shorts a necessity? i've heard that cycling can cause damage to the genitals, and i'd rather not wear spandex in my current state for my own and everyone else's sake

also any recommendations on a road bike under $1k? I'd ask /n/ but that board is 10x slower than /fit/

just get a casual bike and a gel seat, you'll be fine.

I can't really help, but my friends are huge road bike enthusiast. I REALLY want one, they are so nice.

Just check craigslist and newspaper ads, and at the very least, you might be able to build one out of nice matierials.

well if you're a little on the heavy side, maybe a good solid steel frame would be good, over the lighter shit like aluminum, carbon fiber, etc. SURLY, makes good frames in this realm.

gel saddles are not the *best* for riding, especially if for exercise - leather is ideal, as it will mold to the shape of you. and if you're doin this for exercise, you don't want to put a lot of weight on your butt anyway, you wanna put it on your legs.

brooks is a highly regarded maker of leather saddles. if you're worried about your genitals getting smooshed, there are saddles that have cutaways that remove some stress from that area.

The geometry on Felt's "Z" series of bikes is more aimed at fitness rather than the pro race peleton.

...in other words, it is a more upright seating position to accommodate your gut.

Very few bikes on the market will come stock with a set of rims that will take the day to day beating of a 235lb guy. However, The felt Z70 comes stock with a set of 32 spoke Mavic wheels with DT Swiss straight gauge steel spokes.

those wheels should stand up to having a large man atop them.

Also the Shimano 105 components offer 30 gears to get your fat ass up almost any hill you encounter.

I would say that is very close to your best bet.

I raced on felt for 2 years and enjoyed all of the bikes I used.

**That is about as nice as I can be when I get to play Annon.

Now go ride fatty.

And yea...get the "padded" shorts...that way when you look in a mirror you realize how important getting in shape is...(But only get bib shorts...and really....REALLY [I can not express this enough] get a nice pair of shorts. Look at the Assos Uno for around $160 usd. I know it seems like alot but there is a HUGE difference between a pair of 30 dollar Peral Izumi shorts from Dick's Sporting Goods and a nice firm cycling short. Check out Competitivecyclist.com, there prices on shorts will be competitive with most places on nice shorts.

Check out thrift stores too for bikes.

Yes, weight is an issue, especially with race wheels. Mavic offers wheels of up to 100kg if I remember right. Read their stuff.

Gel saddles are horrible, get a good sports saddle with a middle cut. Try out different ones, don't need to be expensive, just fit your ass.

The price difference between the 105 group and the Ultregra group is very small. Get a bike with Ultegra if you can.

Buy yourself a bike magazine, they are full of tips on gear and vendors. Used bikes too.

LOL, whats a good fat dood saddle? I know that My SLR fits me like a glove...But you get more that 70kg on that....and, well your fuct.

I wouldn't worry about the parts so much. 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace... The only place you will notice the difference is in your wallet. Stick with 105 and you'll be happy.

I would worry about the wheels. Like I said, the Z70's Mavics are a great set to start with... If they don't hold you could easily have your local bike shop build you a set of 36 spoke Mavic Open Pros on Surly hubs for around $250 Usd.

don't forget the nice shorts fatty.
