So /fit/ I was born into vegetarian family and have been a vegetarian all my life. I've never taken any vitamins or supplements yet I read about people saying vegetarians should.

I'm a cheese and egg eating variety of Vegetarian.
But no fish/chicken/meat.
So what should I be taking?

Are general multivitamins ok?
Or should I be using some specific ones.
>> Anonymous
Ovo lacto vegetarians are not missing anything. Just keep balanced, and try to favor the whole grains, legumes and complex carbs.
>> Anonymous
If that is your case and you are an egg and cheese eater most likely you will need a general vitamin, but I would also toss in some Omega 6 fatty acid pills since you do not eat fish...

Or you could try eating healthy small doses of high quality meat. (If you are not morally opposed to it)

I'll probably just go general multi then.
I think my butter is bragging about its omega acids on the damn package anyway.

Thanks.

Ok good luck

yea its not omega 6 thats in eggs already....well unless you get organic egglands best or some shit they have omega 3 i think....but yea you should just take fish oil because its by far the best source....you do dairy right so protein shakes also :)

Omega 6 are in nearly every type of vegetable oil, and are definitely in eggs. Also, too much of that will fuck you all up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega-6_fatty_acid

Omega 3s are found primarily in fish, flax, meat and eggs.

All fatty acids are controversial in nearly every study. They have not directly closed the gap between hailing it, or vilifying it. I suggest you leave the fatty acids to natural intake from your regular diet. An OVo lacto veggie will have no problems getting his essential FA.

Meat, obviously.

Or eggs. Or vegetable oil. Or wheat. Or whatever.

You should be taking vitamin supplements, especially B12 as there is hardly any of this in a vege diet.

I was more referencing the fact that eggs which a vegetarian is likely to eat have more omega 3 fatty acids in them(vegetarian chicken laid eggs) but i looked it up and they still have the same amount of omega 6 as a normal egg 700mg but they have 100mg of omega 3....i'd supplement with fish oil...

Eggs? Check. Dairy? Check. B12? Check.

you know what you need to add to your diet vego....which i mean you eat eggs and cheese so you are not as bad off but fried bean balls...falafel...i don't know what different kinds of fried bean balls you could make but i have to admit they do sound rather tasty.....
>> Anonymous
now what is the easiest way to make some fried bean balls? i have no idea thats for you guys to tell me now...
>> Anonymous
http://mideastfood.about.com/od/maindishes/r/falafelrecipe.htm

I personally am going to try this tomorrow with some canned ones...canned chick-peas/garbanzo beans are probably plenty tasty....maybe try fried bean ball mix try some peas in there too or some shit :)

i just found out coriander is really cilantro....i fucking hate coriander(it is one of the ingredients of blue moon ale which i fucking hate) but i love cilantro weird huh?

Agreed.

If I don't religiously weight lift like you guys are protein shakes still beneficial or just taking it too far?
I've only heard of "bulkers" or whatever they are using them.
>> Anonymous
yea i decided the other day fried bean balls are the new vegofag /fit/ meme...even though i eat about 2 pounds of meat per day :).....they actually have the opposite problem of fat people they need more fat in their diet so they have enough for hormone creation and whatnot....i think i might now use any cumin in mine and replace it with a bit of lime juice.....i don't know why but that just seems right to me :) also i'm going to add a little mustard as a binding agent...it has special properties

well you don't have to but if you aren't getting 1 gram of protein for every pound of lean bodyweight you are doing something wrong...also they are very useful for pre/postworkout nutrition for optimal protein synthesis you are supposed to eat a protein shake before you work out(40 minutes) and then one post workout(within about 30 minutes to an hour of working out this is also optimal time to do cardio without burning muscle)take postworkout with milk plus then a good meal about another hour later with 50grams of protein and 10 grams of fiber..........i personally like to use them as meal replacements and eat flax seed/fiber bar with them when i'm not working out....caesin is supposed to be better but its also another thing to buy and i'm cheap....but i still eat a good amount of meat/cottage cheese/milk as well
>> Anonymous
>>338574
also you are confused by weight gain shakes and protein supplements....there are weight gainer shakes that have like 2000 calories in them...and then there are protein shakes which have 120 calories for every 25 grams of protein and are by far the most bioavailble protein source for your body.....its basically super slim fast with more protein(and better source than) and no fiber added to it.....there are also different kinds of whey. Whey is also in fact a commodity. Whey isolate which is also known as WP100(isolate) WP80(concentrate) WP20(shitty concentrate)....good brand will be either all WP100 or a blend of Wp100 and wp80....wal-mart brands will have a bunch of wp20 in them....)

My guess is that you are probably over 20 yrs old.
Now. If you have lived for 20 years without any vitamins or supplements and are still living and healthy.
Then ask yourself a question
why the fuck do you need them
>> Anonymous
>>338592
to get more healthier? you can be skinny and still be unhealthy you know right? I have a skinny friend who has ulcers and internal bleeding and shit regularly because he drinks like a fish...but he still looks like someone who works out everyday...even though he is in horrible shape
>> Tarzan !3GqYIJ3Obs
>>338596
Of course you can be unhealthy while being in shape.
but there is no point in taking supplements when you don't need them. Too much capsules will hurt your health as much as not eating properly. I wouldn't go on the supplements. Drink your milk, Eat your oatmeal and don't worry about what people say about what vegetarians should do. Most probably they even aren't vegetarians. What i'm trying to say is that if you've been fine for 20 years without any serious health complications from malnutrition, then you are doing it right and should keep doing it. it works.

you mean omega 3. omega6 is overabundant
>> Anonymous
>>338583
1g per lb is overkill for non-athletes, so he isn't doing anything wrong. also, you do not want to consume milk postworkout as this will slow down protein absorption

STOP BEING A BUTTPLUG SUCKING PUSSY AND EAT A FUCKING ANIMAL YOU DICKLESS PIECE OF NIGGER SHIT
>> Anonymous
OP you have bad parents who are hippie sounding faggots, enjoy your gay city of san franciso
>> Anonymous
Be sure to take in some pig, cow, chicken, and fish.

Your parents were wrong, eating animals is what omnivores are supposed to do.
>> Anonymous
Quit being such a fucking pussy and eat some meat.

For every animal you don't eat, I'll eat three.
>> Anonymous
Just eat the meat, By not eating it, you are making the killing of animals only more useless, It's not like they'll kill less animals if 1% of the world population will not eat meat. The amount of animal killed will stay the same, and you're only fucking yourself up, you fucking hippie.
Meat, bitch, EAT IT.
>> Anonymous
According to that recent study they did, it showed that vegetarians might have a vitamin B12 deficiency from not eating meat, which causes your brain to shrink. So you might want to take B12 supplements.
