>I have heard that cardio like that is not good for building mass
True. Running provides fair resistance, but not so much that your lower body muscles will develop massively. They get constantly toned and burn a lot of calories, but they don't grow very much from running alone.
>if I were to attach weights to myself (50 lb vest, etc), would that have any sort of positive effect in muscle growth?
No. It would just throw off your balance and likely end up damaging your back.
>what the hell good does running do, other than burn calories and improve heart function?
That's pretty much what it does. It strengthens your cardiovascular system and heavily uses your lower body. You stay in an aerobic state for a long period of time, work large muscle groups, and increase how much oxygen is being delivered to your body, thusly burning calories rather efficiently.
If you want bigger muscles, pick up heavy objects until you can't pick them up any more.
