Paroxetine [Paxil] Anonymous
I have had had severe social anxiety for about ten years and finally went to the doctor and was prescribed Paroxetine. Has anybody had any experience with this drug?

i used paxil for a few months for severe depression and severe social anxiety.

it did alright with depression, no change in social anxiety though, so i had to switch.
i didnt have any abnormal reactions though, which was nice.

everyone's different though, and hopefully it'll work for you. took me a while to finally get the right medicine.
good luck!

I'm on this for OCD/anxiety. Has been great. The first two weeks were rough, I was exhausted all the time, even when I tried taking it at night instead of in the morning, but that went away. Has seemed to make me gain/retain weight easier though, but everyone's different. Try it for about 2-3 months (give your body time to adjust to it) and if it isn't helping, go back to the doc.

I've heard it either makes you gain or lose weight. hopefully it's the latter (5' 10" 135lbs) I'm not obese, but losing a bit of weight would never hurt.

people have wildly different experiences on paxil

i took the regular 20mg for a while. when the sun went down i pretty much fell asleep instantly. it was messed up. also was really sensitive to alcohol. the combination made my first new year's shit.

next thing that happened was it was really hard to have an orgasm. holding back used to be about willpower and then suddenly it was, do i have the will to go for long enough. as a guy it was good for the ego, until i realized that the girl i was with started to take it personally.

also, feeling good in situations where you used to not feel good can mess with your reality. it's better, don't get me wrong, but you can make some pretty poor decisions because you're feeling fine instead of wary.

all this stuff happened in reverse when i went off it, pretty much.

final words: your doc will give you a plan to wean off it. FOLLOW THE PLAN. people get fucked up by going cold turkey off paroxetine and end up taking ssris forever.

when you're withdrawing you might feel little electric shocks in your head. it's messed up and it's your sign that you're withdrawing. a low dose of paxil (or I actually used a different ssri, one dose, divide in half, in half, in half...) will make it go away.

after two months or so you should be alright, and not back at square one.

your mileage may vary. be careful, but if you use it properly it really can help you get the good experiences under your belt that will finally significantly (not completely) help you see social situations a better way.

that was two months getting off it. two months on it will do nothing. more like a year to establish a new normal.

You're a bit retarded however. I'm 5'5" and 145, I'm considered very skinny. I have very low body fat, but still. The only reason you should want to lose weight is if you are a girl.

I had anxiety and/or OCD.
They gave me Paxil. It did nothing.
They gave me Prozac. Nothing.
Zoloft. Nothing.
Wellbutrin. Helped at first (like a month), then nothing.
Finally I quit all drugs and therapists, then started smoking weed. I got better mentally, met people, made friends, got laid, etc.

I just want to reiterate, that's a true story. A gross distillation of about 3-4 years of my life, but all true.
Also weed helped me lose weight. When I was normally sober, I'd get hungry and think, "I'm hungry, so I must eat." But when high, I would get hungry and tell myself, "No man, that's just the weed giving you the munchies. You're not really hungry."
Similar thing happened with some sexual problems I'd been having as a direct result of anxiety. Weed mellowed me out so I wouldn't stress over the sex act. No more limp weiner and no more premature jizzing.
Weed was a fucking godsend for me. It's also a natural product, non-addicting, and if you're worried about tar and such, just use a vaporizer or cook it up in some butter.

what about the people whose anxiety was brought out through weed?

I hear you. Yes, I do get the typical weed paranoia when I'm high. Worrying that everyone I run into knows I'm high.
If other people get anxious when lighting up, that's their problem.
For me, the key benefit being high is the sense of "everything is o.k." Normal stressors -- like if I spill something, or am about to get up in some chick's guts, or am heading out to a crowded place, etc. -- just don't faze me.
I am not high 24-7. I light up, enjoy it for a few hours, then try to bring back that sense of "ok-ness" with me to sobriety. It carries me through days or weeks at a time.

Thank you, I have heard about these "zaps" but do not plan to go off of paxil anytime in the near future I have read a lot about the drug and 90% of the storys are horror stories about having to quit the drug.

eh, I don't think so. I've been to 115. Male

I took Paxil for about 6 months for social anxiety and depression. It wasn't a real solution;
I only really felt better when I got rid of my shitty girlfriend/job, and went out into the world to do what interested me.

I still get anxiety/depression problems every now and then but I think sorting out your life is better than trying to cover it up with a pill.

what do i mention to the doc that will influence them to give me valium rather than paxil or something else

It's just a matter of talking them into it (OP here). He will discuss with you the number of options you have. (zoloft, paxil, wellbutrin, etc other SSRI) and the strong drugs (Xanax, Valium, etc.) I have a bit of a history of dabbing recreationally with opiates so personally I didn't want to go with the valium.

It would have been quite easy to talk him into it. He was very open to fluxuation.
