I am scheduled to take my CFA for the Naval Academy a week from saturday, and I want to maximize my push up and pull up reps as fast as possible. Can /fit/ give me any tips?

I recently prepared for a Navy PRT for a scholarship program I applied for.

Now, I don't know how the CFA differs from the PRT, but in the PRT we don't do any pull ups.

My best results were from doing lots of reps throughout the day. Every hour for 6-8 hours I would crank out a max set of push ups. Came out to 300+ a day.

I imagine the same would be true for pull ups. Feel free to take a rest day or two if you see your numbers dropping off because your muscles aren't healing. Eat plenty of nutritious foods and protein.

Good luck... maybe I'll see you in the fleet sometime (although I think I'll hit LTJG before you hit Ensign)

Forgot to mention that this is from starting out a fatass nerd a year ago who couldn't do a single push up, let alone a pull up. Now I'm doing well on all of those things. So I know what works, at least for me. I also lift weights, but I stopped while preparing for my PRT because frankly, bench pressing doesn't seem to help me get in any more push ups.

Alright well I'll try that, thanks for the advice

Way I got to 20 pullups was to just go out 3 times a day and do 20 pullups no matter how long it took me. I also began doing weighted pullups at the gym when I got up to 15, and the weighted seemed to do the trick.

You can alternate pulling and pushing as well. Like this.

Morning: 20 pullups/40 pushups

Noon: 20/40

Night: 20/40

Also, when doing pullups an underhand grip may seem easier now, but if you work the overhand grip your pullups will build faster. An overhand grip uses your back muscles, which grows much faster than your bicep muscles, which is the dominant muscle in underhand pullups.

Do that during the week and take the weekends off.

You're right to stop benching if you're only looking to do more push-ups. Eventually Push-ups just turns into a matter of endurance than strength.
