HIIT on treadmills sucks. They aren't explosive enough. You need to be able to go from active rest to full exertion. That said, I see nothing wrong with doing HIIT on a stationary bike, recumbike, or elliptical if you are adamant on not running outside.
I generally do 30:60 cycles for 10 minutes, but I'm sure there'll be a dozen anons who'll call me a pussy for that.
