since cardio = getting heart rate up
and weight lifting gets people's heart rate up,
does weight lifting = cardio?

no

Yes, but if you think about the actual amount of time you spend lifting the weights and how much it ups your heart rate, it doesn't do very much for you compared to a good run.

so to lose weight all one has to do is weight lifting..

I was thinking the same thing myself actually.

Yes, actually. There's no magical property to getting your heartrate up on a stationary bike that you can't get with other things.

Although moving heavy weights just can't be sustained long enough to serve as "cardio". Here's the deal. Do pull-ups, push-ups, and squats continuously in a circuit for twenty minutes without a break, and tell me if you feel any "cardio".
