My university has a Judo club. It's been around for a while. (They also have a class that runs into the club meetings.) It's only like $20 a year and $20 for a gi. I've been interested for a while, but I've never done martial arts or wrestling before, so I'm having trouble working up the confidence to give it a try. I know I have nothing to lose by going.

Talk to me, /fit/. Tell me what I need to hear.

Pic related. First Google Image result for Judo.

Judo is cool. I've seen lightweight guys who are fucking good at throwing people around.

20 dollars a year?!

Thats a great deal.

Yeah. They don't have to pay to use the facility on campus. They already have mats and stuff. The two instructors don't take any money for their instruction.

Damn. Shortfag here. 5'7".

Judo is the most fun you can have rolling around with your clothes on.

I've done judo for 5 years. It's extremely fun, and depending on your sensei, physically demanding. I say this because i had both senseis that focused on the art side of judo, focusing on learning techniques(AND THEIR FUCKING NAMES)in kata, and others that focused on the competetitive side, focusing on conditioning and mastering a few useful techniques.

Why am i arguing this with you? IT'S 20 FOR A FUCKING YEAR. DO IT YOU FUCKING FAGGOT. I PAYED 40 PER MONTH TO DO JUDO. But then again, your sensei must be completely incompetent for the cost to be that low.

I hear Judo is some pretty cool shit, pretty good for self defense too.

OP, do if know if the school competes with other universities? That's usually a good sign.

There is a Judo team, too. Basically, you have to show up to the two club meetings every week and a third, additional workout on Sundays. Some of them do go to competitions.

I don't think they're "incompetent". I think they're not in it to make money. They just have to break even.

Former self defense instructor for a college here.

There is two payscale systems for colleges.
1.) instructor is paid per hour by the school.
2.) instructor is paid per quarter by the school.

The schools themselves usually lose money on clubs/activities. At schools where the classes themselves are free, it is taken out of your tuition wether you use it or not.

it's all good dude, i'm only 5'7 myself.

Judo is good. Good clinches, good takedowns, some good subs.

It's a fantastic foundation. Add some standup skillz, and some ground game (BJJ, etc), and you'll be bad ass. Most BJJ places teach judo nowadays; the 2 are closely related.

And for only 20 bucks? hop on that shat.

Fight like a tall guy then. I'm tall and you just have to use it.

Really fucked. In high school wrestling I slapped around lanky mofos like you. It helps that I'm a walking stump of muscle tho, 5 feet 5.

Hah, that's pretty much what I'm talking about. I could weigh the same as my opponent, be similarly strong, and just get iced because of how I'm not compact.

How does a tall guy fight then? I've never done any MA, let alone any other form of fighting.

Keep distance and jerk em around. Keep him higher up with your arms.

Also, Osoto-gari. Get really good at it.

Don't know much about fighting tall in judo. If you really like grappling I'd suggest jujitsu or something similar where you can use your long limbs and don't necessarily have to stay on your feet. Or you could just pick a MA that's better for tall people, like ANY kind of striking, where you can use a reach advantage.

I started Judo recently (only going for yellow belt grading next week), good fun, good exercise

the advantage i'd say to being taller is the fact that your arm length is greater and you can keep your opponent away from you and can therefore avoid their sweeps easier.
At least, that's how it worked against a brown belt i faced off against.

a fun sport, and does teach some great self defense tips

but remember, above all it is a sport
