Alright /fit/, I've been looking to get into martial arts lately, but I've been wondering which one I should learn in combination with Krav Maga. I've been considering Hapkido, Aikido, or some Jiu-Jitsu. My goals are getting fit and practical street defense, I never want to lose a fight if one arises. I didn't see anywhere else to post this either... It didn't belong on /sp/.

Obviously Shooto, it even fits in pretty well with KM.

It's very flexible and has pretty much a counter for anything.

Practical street defense? Western boxing.
>> Anonymous
As far as straight forward, effective self defense, you don't want a martial art, you want to learn to fight. It's the difference between shredding and a great solo.

If you want practical, easily learnt and applied self defense, jiu jitsu is reasonable, but takes a bit to learn. Krav maga and muay thai are FANTASTIC, they teach you the raw essentials, how to apply them in lots of ways that are simple and effective. Western boxing is good, but I feel that Muay Thai is a more "whole" approach to simple impact fighting. If you're more into take downs, brazillion jiu jitsu is very good because it puts anyone who thinks they can fight (can throw a punch or two) into a position they wouldn't expect, most likely a submission hold, or if you're an angry lil fella, a nice snap of some tendons somewhere.

my top 3 suggestions:
Muay Thai
Brazillian Jiu jitsu
Krav maga

In no particular order, btw.

Martial arts are lame in real life situations and general only work with a sparring partner except a select few (krav maga, bjj for example). High kicks to the head and shit like that you'd NEVER do on the street.

A street fight usually lasts around 30 seconds to a minute and general is just punching unless one of you goes down.

Learn how to box and hit hard and maybe some roman-greco grappling.

Make a list of the available martial arts in your area and post it here.

It's no good us recommending an art that you can't take.

Also, all the arts you've listed are good, provided the instructor is decent. The instructor, for the most part, matters far more then the art.

Speaking as a huge martial arts geek, you'd do well to get some basic Karate and stuff under your belt, Judo is nice too, but in all reality, use them in close range last resort situations where you're being attacked hand to hand, otherwise, if the fucker pulls either a knife or other kind of weapon on you, be ready to draw your gun and shoot center body. Most martial arts guys get delusional and start thinking they can be Bruce Lee or some kind of invincible anime god...If some drunk bastard tries to punch me in the face I'll use appropriate physical combat techniques, but if that same bastard pulled a knife on me hes signed his own death warrant.

So, tl;dr = Take Karate, maybe Judo, learn to box, and buy a gun.

The problem with saying "buy a gun" is that you also have to get your license to carry concealed, and many places don't allow it

Aikido, and hapkido DO NOT WORK.
Take one of these: Brazilian jiu jitsu, Krav maga, Muay thai, shooto, or western boxing.
Definitely do not take: Kung fu, tae kwon do, or karate.

I dont know anything about your area, but Aikido has been my staple since I was 10 (now 24), and while its done nothing for my fitness (I rely on cardio for that), it has literally saved my life once, and aided me in winning six unscheduled fights, and numerous kumite.

BJJ is truly a vicious art, and brutally effective. The two main cons to this art, is that 1) There is no true range. The most effective skills for a BJJ artist is their grapplings and incapacitation moves, which rely on getting right next to the opponent. If they're unarmed, this is all well and good. If not...

Also, BJJ is, by nature, a violent art. I know, all martial arts are violent to a degree, hence the word martial, but a style like Aikido is all about removing the threat. BJJ means you want them to pay for their audacity.

Krav Maga is also a mighty vicious sport, and since it requires highly aggressive moves, Aikido would be my recommendation to balance out your repitoire. Avoid the fight with Aikido, win the fight with Krav.

Finally, your instructor is most important. You could have an unbeatable style, but if your teacher is shit, so too will your technique.

Hope I helped.
>> Anonymous
>>35570

Indeed. I've done BJJ and Judo, and the groundwork of Judo is inferior, but it exists to a degree. Besides, if you spike them off the ground hard enough, you shouldn't have to worry about it.

My favorite combo is any Grappling style and Muay Thai.

You grapple, then knee the fuck out of their kidneys. GG
>> Anonymous
If you want street defense simply: Westering boxing combined with some sort of grappling.

Taking a martial art just because it has a cool sounding japanese name will not make you a super hero. Learn how to punch properly, defend yourself from punches and grapple, not do jumping bicycle kicks and stupid ass gook fist spins punching from no guard.
>> Anonymous
krav maga is the most useless martial art you can learn imo
I mean it's just kickboxing/muay thai except that you're teach some "vicious" strike which are just the reflexe everybody will have (do you need to pay a monthly fee to a gym to learn to kick in the groin ?)

go to a kickboxing gym (whatever style) + grappling (whatever style, even judo) and you will be good
(and being a practisioner of a martial arts doesn't mean you'll have enough ball to use it)

"Sports" are the best way to train martial arts safely against a resisting opponent (that is, really train). It doesn't matter if you have a ZOMG!!1KILLER TECHNIQUE if you're only doing it in kata and can't practice it on a resisting opponent. Some sportive martial arts are more practical than others though (bjj vs. tae kwon do).
>> Anonymous
Alright serious question

why are stupid fucks CONSTANTLY talking about how certain martial arts are perfect and others are pathetic

It all comes down to a few very simple things

1. your level of fitness vs your opponent
2. How good your instructor was (no matter the art)
3. how much time and effort you put into properly executing the techniques you learned.

BJJ is extremely effective only because the people who train in it are typically more dedicated than a soccer mom learning karate with her son.

Judo, hapkido, and tae kwon do practitioner here.

Out of the three i know, Id say that judo would be by far the most useful in your typical real-world fight. That being said, the others can be particularly devastating. The joint-locks of hapkido can break and disable limbs, and Tae kwon do is fucking fast.

imo people in this thread are underestimating that last one. Tae kwon do is fast and powerful. The only real drawback i can see for a real world fight is the fact that it has no grapple defense. Some fucker could just barrel down and bullrush you, and tae kwon do would offer no help. But seriously, one good knee kick, one good side-snap, and one round-house could finish a fight quickly.

Judo makes ending grapples simple, and a good throw will end everything, especially when fighting over concrete. Unless the fucker knows how to fall correctly, hes probably gonna hit his head hard.

And im not really sure why people are saying judo has no groundwork, because it does. Its just that most of Judos groundwork relies on restricting the opponent, and peacefully ending the fight, not killing him. However it does have chokes, and those have killing potential.

Really OP, any martial art will give you giant edge over your typical street goon who doesnt know how to correctly deliver a strike. And theyre all good exercise.
>> Sasky
>>35789
It's not about the money, no. It is about the lessons. Like maybe people start standing up for themselves, and this shit's not going to happen any more. Oooooh! It's a big scary criminal. These people are not super-human, you can be better than them. Besides, like I said, most crims around here are punks or drunks that expect people to just fold. Show force, and you likely won't.

Either that or it's going to be some native gang initiation and you're gonna get beat up or killed whether you give in or not, because you're just a white guy in the wrong place.

I have a very good friend who's in prison for another 6 years. He was robbed at gunpoint. Friend pulls out wallet in one hand. Robber lowers gun to take wallet. Friend draws with other hand and puts two in the head.

Since at the time of shooting the robber had his gun down and was 'not posing a lethal threat', my friend got 10 in san quentin.

It may be even worse if you disable the guy, he can sue your ass for emotional distress or injury and there's virtually no recourse for you. Just give him the fucking money.

Statistically speaking, if someone has a gun drawn on you and you try to rush them, you will almost always lose. Now, maybe if you keep the pressure on them so they won't be able to pull it, fine, but once the gun is out hand over your money.

Sending a message to criminals sounds nice, but a criminal with a gun has every advantage in a fight and they know it.

Why did someone point a gun at you? Got robbed?

I've fired a gun, it's not difficult. I'm not saying it's impossible to disarm someone who has a gun, but generally speaking it's not the best course of action. You can get shot, which I've heard sucks, and you get nothing out of it except some vague sense of community improvement and maybe a hood arrested for weapons possession and attempted robbery. The fact that you disregarded another poster's cautionary tale about his friend in San Quentin with a simple "he got the robber!" is really telling.
>> Sasky
>>35826
Well, yeah. Rushing a person with a gun, admittedly stupid. Disarms are for when a person has it at point blank. Don't think I'm an unreasoning person and that I can just disarm anyone from across the room. I'm no Chuck Norris that can yell "BANG" and point my finger and they die. I have a little better grasp on my limits than that. You have to evaluate every situation differently.

Ok, listen, most of the people in this thread have some misconceptions about martial arts and practical self defense.

You do not train in karate/judo/krav maga/aikido to do karate/judo/krav maga/aikido in a street fight. The training is largely a method used to familiarize yourself with your body and how it operates.

At the end of the day NO ONE CAN TEACH YOU SELF DEFENSE. Training in martial art will only help your body make better decisions when things hit the fan.

The greatest benefit you will ever take away from a martial art is the spiritual aspect. And if you don't want to do that, then you should just find a new hobby.
