Shoveling Snow Anonymous
Hello /fit/, I was pondering, can shoveling snow be considered an badass exercise in itself? I live in the Buffalo (NY) region and was shoveling my driveway today, and it was the super heavy saturated snow, I could feel it tighting my back and stomach really well! If I shovel all winter do you think it will aid in getting riped abs? I mean either way, you're burning calories and using muscle, but it seems like a brutal badass workout while you are actually getting something done!

>can shoveling snow be considered an badass exercise in itself?

Yes, works a shitload of muscles... Probably around your entire body. Produces a fuckload of testosterone if you really get exhausted.

>but it seems like a brutal badass workout while you are actually getting something done!

It's fucking manly and you know it. I'm a Viking from Norway, and I fucking love shoveling my driveway every fucking day. Brutal shit

best way to get "functional strength" is my doing real activities. chop lumber, swing axes, do pull ups, pick up heavy ass rocks/logs and carry them around and toss them around.

i've been doing this shit for 4 years and i haven't touched a dumbell or barbell yet and i'm pretty strong and have some nice muscle. i love shoveling snow..it's such an intense workout

it's a good workout, it's not going to get you ripped alone though

fuck being cut. i'd rather be a man and tossm y fucking logs over head every fucking day and pick up giant rocks and carry them up hills then have a 400 pound squat. hahaha squats are functional training for real life situations? Why not just practice those real life situations?

I love Its always sunny in Philadelphia!

Keep it brutal, keep it real.

strongmen squat all the time in training faggot, if they didn't they'd be weak as fuck. their training is a mix of event-specific training and traditional strength training movements.

im not talking about people with specific goals. i'm takling about people looking for functional strength. you wanna be strong in everyday activities? Do those very day activities at an intense level.

that makes no fucking sense.

people come on this board and go LOL DEADLIFTS GIVE YOU FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH

you know what's better for functional strength? Doing normal activities at an intense level..functional strenght would be lifting and moving things in all planes of motion. wanna get better at picking oddly shape things up and throwing them over your shoulder? go use logs and rocks. wanna get better at being able to pull things? Climb trees. Want to get better at pushing? Take a wheelbarrow full of rocks up a hill.

Want to get better at standing up under heavy weights? Sit down on the ground, put a log on your back, and get up.

that shit will prepare you for the real world better than any riptoe or 5X5 program. if you just wanna lift to get strong at lifting than that's cool.

but don't be a fucking tool and think your squats are smoehow going to give you superhuman strength.

What do you think putting on log on your shoulders and getting up is? It's pretty much a squat. Practicing it with repetitions and incrementally increased weight of a known amount will help you with that.

Protip:

There is a crossfit workout that involves "shoveling snow" (but they usually use grinded up rubber or gravel or whatever).

most people work out for aesthetics
functional strength is mostly unnecessary in today's world unless you're a professional athlete or want to fuck your lady friend standing up

and "functional" activities alone won't get you a great body. I know some faggot is going to try to argue this and post a picture of some ripped dude who obviously lifts.

squats onlt train workout one plane of movement. to be really strong, you need to train in all planes of movement.

>>477297
it's easy to say functional training isn't necessary when you're a basement dweller who's hoping that his subpar physique will make up for his lack of personality
>> Anonymous
>>477290
but only in one plane. while yes, you will become strong, you will become in only one plane. calisthenics + functional training = strength in all planes.

name one example in that post that you would categorize as an 'everyday activity"

an everyday activity for me is to drive to class, and sit in class, and drive back. So i do this need4speed style, yes or no

wait until you get a little older and own a house with some property and have kids and a family. it's not like i'm some farmer who has to throw bales of hay around for 12 hours a day. but do some yard work for once and stop being a typical lazy american cunt. you'll realize there's a huge difference from squatting 400 lbs and building a shed and hauling lumber and holding it up while hammering away. it's much more satisfying than paying someone to do it too..it's an integral part of being a man.

OP here again, I agree, the functional stuf is way more badass and its the practicality of doing it! your actually getting stuff done! like chopping wood is brutally awesome!

lolwat? so men in their prime (20-30) cannot have functional strength? lolwut

and i handle powertools almost on a daily basis. If you are not careful with them (aka using them in an INTENSE way), you will have limbs chopped off. I've seen it happen. Unless your body grows a bulletproof exoskeleton when you buy a house and settledown i call bullshit

wtf are you talking? I'm advocating people to have functional strength. i'm pointing out that it might not seem necessary for people in their early 20's who don't do anything more strenuous then wake up in the morning to go to class but you will reach a point in your life eventually when you realize that "strength" means more than just doing a weight training routine in the gym

and i still dont know the point of your post..did you think i was dissing functional strength or something? and wtf is the whole "bulletproof exoskeleton" comment about? WTF are you talking about?

OP, we should all go drop acid with Danny DeVito to calm down lawl

>can fuck your oats! and squats?
