i would ask on /fa/, but they're, well, /fa/ggots, and this is kinda fit related.

i want to get a real razor. I'm pretty much settled on the merkur HD, but don't know what else i'm gonna need besides a brush and shaving soap (or is that it?). I also don't know which brush/soap to get, and I'm on a budget. Any recommendations? The Merkur set is 91 bucks, that seems kinda steep.

tl;dr good value shaving brush and soap

Shaving mug/dish perhaps? Not really sure what it is used for... I think you can lather up the brush with it? Not all that necessary as you could do that with the pot of shaving soap.

Oh, you need a strop, and stuff to look after the strop (not sure what that stuff is, exactly) - and perhaps a sharpening stone for every now and again.

i plan on just replacing the blades as they wear out, they're 50 cents each i think.

any recommendations on a good cheap brush adn soap?

You don't need to buy a mug or dish.

One of your own cups or small bowls should work fine. Do not use the soap container itself.

If you're going with a double edged safety razor, you don't need a strop or any such shit.

I would recommend getting some decent after shave with it. An actual lotion, not that alcoholic chemical shit.

As for the brush, anything with badger hair. Boar hair is shitty. Badger hair is nice.

My experiences with http://www.bestgroomingtools.com/ have been great

I have the merkur, great razor, and I also use a badger brush. I usually use Arko which works pretty well. I also use an italian one I can't remember the name of. Oh, and you can use a bowl or whatever, but I just use my palm to lather. I might be 'doing it wrong', but my face is smooth and I enjoy the shave so I don't mind.

I bought mine for $10 shipped about a a year ago. I suggest you look around. It is not a "lifetime" investment like some others, but it does a fine job, and is a step up from boar hair.

PROTIP> tabac shaving soap.

The HD is a fine first choice.
I am using a slant now, and gave the HD to my brother. I might recommend you hold off on the "package" for now, and piece together a kit HD, tweezerman/omega, and a puck of tabac...

Also, you might want to go here, but be warned, this shit is addictive. www.badgerandblade.com

So, how close of a shave do these things give? I don't know if I'm just a huge failure, but no matter how well I try to shave, I end up with a shadow and/or cutting myself.

I meant with non-fancy stuff.
