So most weight routines are sets of reps... can you gain muscle mass or endurance with simply holding a large weight for a long time, instead of repetitively moving it up and down? Or does that not tear the muscle and just fatigue it?

I ask this because in a new thread one anon said holding large weights with a tight grip will strengthen forearms, and that seems to have none of the repetitive motion of other strength builders

You are talking about isometrics

Charles Atlas popularized them, fell into obscurity but are gaining adepts again.
But I think there's studies showing they only increase the resistance, and the muscle mass is affected very little

Isometrics are awesome for gaining strength, but here's the catch: They only strengthen from the position that you trained in.

That's actually something I'm interested in: strength but little hypertrophy of the muscles.
