dear /fit/

indoorsfag here
other than electricity requirements, what are the benefits of using an elliptical over a standard treadmill contraption, if there are any at all?

Also, how does exercise on an elliptical compare to actually going outdoors and running?

My final question is what, if any, benefit would ankleweights provide to exercise via elliptical? I understand the drawback of ankleweights to be the strain they place on the joints themselves, but that this effect owes itself to the repeated-impact nature of running, which is absent on an elliptical.

You answered your own question.

>benefits of using an elliptical over a standard treadmill
>repeated-impact nature of running, which is absent on an elliptical

It's for people with bad joints.

An elliptical trainer is a vastly superior form of cardio compared to running. Substantially less stress on the joints plus an overall more efficient workout.

The only real drawback: lack of scenery. Working out for more than 30 minutes on the elliptical becomes very quickly boring - even though you are getting a good workout.

More efficient? Link to prove it? I've never seen someone exert more effort on one of them than a runner does, and it seems like it would be a pain in the ass to use it at such speed.

Simple solution for this is to put a tv in front of it. I use mine while watching movies, and sometimes I get so into the movie that I forget that I am exercising.
