how do i tone my stomach/do crunches correctly? i had been doing them on my bed and apparently that is a big no. doing them on the floor hurts my spine so i must be doing something wrong i guess.

there is no "spots" is what hes trying to tell you. you just gotta do aerobic exercise until your ENTIRE body fat percentage decreases. theres a first and a last place to loose fat. for men its stomach and bootay, and for girls its booty and thighs i might be missing a little something but this is basically it..

Lift legs up so your thighs are vertical and your legs are at a right angle.

Hold a wait of some kind and lie on the floor (preferably carpet or something as hard floor won't be that pleasant.

Then keeping your back rigid and without bringing your chin into your chest, breath out and lift up towards your legs (similar to a crunch).

Works all the abdominal muscles and is more effective. To do the sides hold the weight to the side and do the same.
