One handed pushups and pullups are actually less effective in gaining strength than their two-handed counterparts. They look cool and they're somewhat difficult, but you'd be much better off just increasing the intensity of your current pushups/pullups or finding a new, more difficult exercise altogether.

I'm a gymnast, I teach gymnastics and I lift weights. I recommend lifting weights. Bodyweight exercises are awesome but you can only get so strong with them. I've gained 30 pounds since I started lifting, and it has made everything easier. To reiterate, bodyweight exercise is great, but it cannot replace proper weightlifting.

Bodyweight exercises are classy shit. But you have to look at what each kind of exercise develops and what you're aiming to develope.

Bodyweight has a focus on functional strength. Let me define this because lifting does something different, but similar. If you plan to climb rocks, do combat sports, or join the army, bodyweight tends to work much better, because it focuses on allowing you to do things like lift yourself up over prolonged periods of time It's more about strength-endurance and explosive strength. Will you need to constantly pull yourself up rocks? Will you need to keep moving and active, throwing punches for long periods of time? Do you need quick bursts of below maximum output? Bodyweight is for you.

Weights are more focused on maximal strength, quick bursts of raw power and hypertrophy. Do you play football and need to charge full power at someone? Do you lift heavy shit for a living? Are you planning to punch through walls? Do you want big biceps to get women? Weight lifting is for you.

The best routine is one that combines the strength-endurance and explosive-strength of bodyweight exercises with the raw strength and power of lifting. Which is why you find even if someone claims to do entirely bodyweight exercises, they're wearing weighted backpacks or using improvised weights to supplement.

Unfortunately, most of /fit/ is just working out to get women, rather then to reach an optimal level of fitness or some other goal.

I want to reach the optimal level of fitness. My reason: I want to live longer than other people, and be able to do more than other people. Could you nudge me in the direction of some reading material or something else? I know a bit of basic stuff from endlessly lurking here. This is my first post actually.

Failure as a human being. Bodyweight only is an excuse for being afraid to branch out into different areas of fitness due to stigma and percieved misconceptions. Just like what you have about lifting.

Lifting will make you big and make you strong. But that's all it will do. You will lack endurance and you will lack the ability to make full use of your body. However, for most of /fit/, getting big and strong so people will suck your dick is the point.

If you make the proper progressions in body weight, which does mean eventually turning to what's used by the military and gymnists, you will see great gains. However, if you just do 100 pushups all the time, you will not.

Weights are much easier to gauge progression and ability on. And there are several ways to combine the two.

I don't believe bodyweight only is the answer, unless one starts using devices like weighted vests and backpacks, sledgehammers and so forth.

I disagree that weight lifting is more work, however. Again, in the hypothetical scenario of someone doing basic bodyweight work, compared to someone doing their max level of weights, yes. But if you're doing real, progressive bodyweight work, it's just as grueling.

I did some experiments, did press ups with my hands on scales and could do 60 press ups when i was 100 kg. The scales under my hands and under my feet showed that i was pressing up 60 kg. Then i went and tried to benchpress 60 kg 60 times, it was near impossible, could barely get past 30.

Because press ups your hands are locked and your motions are very controlled. So that is something to think about.

I now do press ups with my feet on the swiss ball, with similar results as going to free weights, my press ups have dropped from current 45- 50 to about 25 with feet on swiss ball.

bodyweight exercises are an amasing place to start, soldiers are shaped with that and noone laughs at a soldier's physique.

Gymnasts hold balance and control much more with their strength than just the body weight, so a hand stand is not 30% harder that a push up becuase you use your whole weight, its more like 5 times harder because you are using your muscles for balance as well and consant adjustment of center of gravity(shifting your entire body many times a second).

For some goals, bodyweight exercises are the right tool, for other goals, a subset of bodyweight exercises only form a subset of the solution, and for yet other goals, bodyweight exercises will not contribute meaningfully.

You change your muscle groups slightly with elevating your feet but there is a difference between swiss bal and chair in the fact that with a swiss ball you are stopping yourself from rolling forward, back, side to side, a high % of your overall muscle movement is dedicated to balance. Similarly to how when you are benchpressing you not only push up you are also controlling the bar from falling forward and crushing your pelvis or backwards and crushing your head(if you are particularly retarded)

You have to remoember that in a standard push up you have absolutely no range of motion and 3 or 4 (depending on how close together you keep your feet) totally fixed points of ancorage

I cant really think of what else you would use to get a similar destabalising effect. But a chair only changes the elevation, its harder but only cause you are not used to it, the ball changes elevation as well as.
