From what I gather, the rib pain thing is pretty common. I get it on my right side, one of my friends on his left. I heard all sorts of theories about the cause - from dehydration (cramping) to something about stress on ligaments connecting to your liver (?) - and I honestly can't say for sure what causes it.
When I start feeling it, I have to control my breathing - deliberately breathing in and out deeply. After a few breaths like that the pain usually goes away, although I may have to repeat that process a couple times during a run.
