Hey fit,

A few months ago I started eat a good diet, cardio and strength training.

I had bought some 25 lbs. dumbells and have been using them since... but now at 3 months of using them I think my muscles are cap'd for the weight..

I know I sound nub but what intervals should I increase weight? Should I go out and buy 30 lbs'ers tonight and then 35s in like 4 weeks ? Not sure what to do but I'd like more growth.. thanks for the advice in advance.
>> Anonymous
Buy adjustable ones. You can't seriously use the same weight for every exercise anyway.

Good Idea, the fitness store I went to just had like York-style ones... I'll invest in adjustable, save a ton of money, thanks.

trust me, unless you want to look like a freak (or are like 6'4" tall).... keep with the 25 lb's. Maaaaaybe go to 30 lb... girls like definition and slight muscle, not massive unproportional muscle

Yeah I'm not going for Arnold style look at all.. Just want to trim my fat and get a bit cut to feel better and impress a bit.. since all my friends a chunky... I'll stand out.

Thanks for the advice, I'll stick with 25-30 lbs. and stay about where I am.. My body fat is low, just need to burn a bit off my stomach to see my abs a bit better but that's just pure cardio right? I heard you couldn't spot burn fat?

wtf are you talking about. he could easily double the weight to 50 pounds per arm for basically every exercise on the planet before he would even begin to come close to looking like someone who might someday be massive.

lol

you can't get massive with just dumbbells, seriously

Hiya fit just had a question,

Four months ago I weighed 262 lbs... today I'm 209 lbs. I'm 6 foot 4 inches btw.

I used to just sit at the PC all da eating soda and chips and playing video games.. now I workout, jog and eat healthy...

my question is... how did this guy in the photo change in less time that I did, did he go like on a rampage regime and use protein powders or something? I'm like only half or less of what he is but I use NO supplements at all.

If all he has are dumbbells for his strength training then he's doing a 50 lbs bench press. The bar on a normal bench press weighs 45 pounds. I can lift 140 and I'm a 135lb 5'10" skinny fag. 50 lbs is a joke for exercises like shoulder shrugs.

Get a good adjustable set so you can do appropriate weight depending on the the exercise and scale your workout as you get stronger without having to buy 30 sets of dumbbells. It will also let you try different workouts(lower weight for endurance, etc)

lol this guy is FABULOUS.

Protein powder is pretty useful in gaining muscle more efficiently. Though if you wanna be more FABULOUS like the dude in the pic in that amount of time supplements are a must. Diet is the most important thing though.

what's the point of using dumbells in a bench press type activity? Ever hear of pushups?

Dumbells can be extended out to your sides, front, top, curled... Any more than 25 lb in each hand and you WILL look gross.

Take it slow, better to do high reps than high weight- especially if you're trying to tone up a bit.

Step 1: Take unsafe dieting drugs.
Step 2: Take steroids
Step 3: Get a great workout regiment
Step 4: Lie about how long it took you by posting pictures with arbitrary dates on them online.
Step 5: ???
Step 6: Successfully troll fat people trying to lose wieght.

Not sure who made all the replies.. but to reply to this one I'm the OP.. I do 100 pushups every second day... being over 200 lbs and 6'6"... 100 is a fucking lot and it really works my chest.

>>283225
Try weighing 130 Lbs and then see how great push ups are. The most weight you can do is how much you weigh and that's only if you do them vertically against a wall. We all know how impressive strength training is with a 130 LB bench press...
>> Anonymous
>If all he has are dumbbells for his strength training then he's doing a 50 lbs bench press

he's effectively doing slightly more, because each side has to carry its own weight. the dominant side can't make up for the weaker side with dumbbells.

>Any more than 25 lb in each hand and you WILL look gross.

What kind of fag are you ? Seriously. Get back to /fa/ if you want to look like an anorexic man child.

>>283239
So what exercises do you do with the dumbbells? If you can do 100 pushups weighing 200 Lbs than I can't imagine you working very much with 25lb dumbells.
>> Anonymous
>>283239
yeah, Im the same person you responded to before.

Yeah, it seems like you're committed if thats the case. I just dont want you to start toning up and then be left with big BALL shoulders (fats going to come off your midsection in a big way, but not really your shoulders).

Go on up to 30 lb, you are probably taller than me anyway. Just vary up your routine alot, get creative with the exercises, and when it comes to side extensions- go back to using the 25's. You can do alot with dumbells... standing up, laying down on your back, doggy style (lifting up the 30's up and to the side, will really work your back)

>>283250
and what kind of fag are you? curls and bench only? K. Im much more ripped than you, and I have a bigger dick FYI
>> Anonymous
Hey all it's the OP..

yeah that's my point I can do 100 pushups... and I use 25 lbs barbells for my other exercises because I've never been into this sort of thing before the last few months.. so I don't even feel a burn anymore when i use barbells..

I guess it's time for me to seriously increase weight or at least start by going to 30s?

Thanks for your answers so far man, I'll take your advice into serious consideration.

doing all that... have you lost much weight in the past few months? Maybe its time for a dietary change?

lol @ this fucking thread. Seems like one guy is spewing all this shit about looking XBOX HUEG and OP unfortunately believes him.

>>283260
If you're worried about him getting disproportionate shoulders you should be telling him to get adjustable weight dumbbells so that he can do different weights for different exercises. Not warning him about the terrible dangers of ever lifting more than 50Lbs...

If he is looking to work out at home, with minimal equipment than an adjustable set will let him proportionately train a lot more muscle groups than just going up to 30 and using that for everything. You're basically telling him to keep his muscles tiny so that even though they are disproportionate because he only has one weight level for every single exercise it won't be noticeable because he's tiny anyway.

>>283280
Ok, then you pay for his personal trainer. You dont even want to be doing curls with 50 lb. Your biceps would seriously just tell girls how much of a pathetic meathead you are.

I'm warning you OP. If you go up to 35 or god forbid 40 pounders you are going to look freakishly huge like this guy. You won't be able to wipe your own ass because the muscles will be gross and HUEG.

hehe i'm the OP... sorry if trolls are getting me or something.. just looking for legit advice and some friends said /fit/ was a good place.

So wait, why should we never lift more than 50lbs? What's going on?

Legit advise:
Get adjustable dumbbells. They are far more flexible. You will be able to do whatever kind of training you want to do. Limiting yourself to one set of weights means you can only do one type of exercise. It will be impossible to start out with endurance and work your way up to heavy weight/low reps gradually. In fact you'll do the opposite. You will buy a new dumbell set which will be heavy so you can only do a few reps and then it will be light once you build some muscle and you will go backward into endurance(the opposite of what 90% of trainers will suggest).

Different exercises are going to warrant different weights. Different points in your workout are going to warrant different weight even for the same exercise. You are going to want more weight as you get stronger.

Buying individual dumbbells will very quickly get expensive, and take up a lot of space if you have any intention of sticking with your lifting.

Adjustable dumbbells won't force you to "GET HUEG" they will in fact do exactly the opposite. They will let you do exactly how much lifting you want for a given muscle at any given point. I don't see the downside.

Unless they came out with some more ergonomic ones recently, I've always found the adjustable DBs to be awkward as fuck.

>>283189

The problem with buying solids is that the stronger you get, the more expensive they become - I picked up a couple of 55's not to long ago and it set me back $120.

Your best bet is just to get a pair of DB bars, some butterfly clamps, and a decent selection of 2 1/2, 5 and 10lb plates.

>Your best bet is just to get a pair of DB bars, some butterfly clamps, and a decent selection of 2 1/2, 5 and 10lb plates. Then you won't find yourself where you are now, needing to add 5-10 more lbs but having to buy 60lbs worth of weight to do it, while leaving your last 50lbs of weights more or less useless.

That's actually what I meant. You don't need to buy the stupid bowflex ones or anything like that. Just buy a bar and a bunch of plate weights. Then you can reuse the same weights as you get stronger and they can also double as weights for a barbell if you ever get one.

For 40 dollars I got a set of these with enough weights to make two 20lb weights at the same time.

Then I just got 4 more 10lb plates for 15 dollars, and i'm going to be good for a year or so
