Alright /fit/, time to clear this up.

Is a gym membership or regular visits to a gym really necessary? Or are most exercises for a good routine able to be done at home?

Join Spetsnaz and do one legged squats!

i do everything at home and all i have is a bench, weights, dumbbells and a bar
>> ESH !Oj4wGhYfsE
There's pros and cons to both. I work out and home and love it cause I can take as long or as short as I'd like between sets and I know I'm not being bothersome to others.

However, maxing out becomes problematic as I hardly ever have a spotter. Also, I can't ask people how my snatch form is, or what I'm fucking up on, cause no one is there who knows any better.

Also, one legged squats are entirely too easy and any real Commie wouldn't let that movement define them. Though, Russians are scum, so, they might.

All I have is a bench, bar, and dumbells in my room. I get everything done. There's also a pull-up bar on my door frame, you can get them for pretty cheap at somewhere like Wal-Mart.

So equipment needed to have effective workouts at home seem to be a bench, dumbbells, and a bar (with weights?) ?

And chicks to watch you get huge and be impressed. You can cage them, tie them up, whatever, as long as they are watching you lift at some point.

Would you guys recommend an exercise ball or bands for some exercises?

i work out at home.

eqpt i have:

bench
olympic bar, 350 lbs of weight
squat rack
pull up bar
adjustable dumbells
jump rope
100 lb punching bag

it all cost about.. 500 bucks MAX, but i got most of the weights hand-me-downs or christmas gifts (squat rack + punching bag) so it's all good.

i vote for home-exercising 10000% especially because you dont have to workout with fucking guidos 24/7

Depends what you want to do really doesn't it...

A swiss ball is helpful for grading up certain exercises (e.g. prone holds).

Bands I'm not sure as I've never used them, obviously get a mat.

w... what?

It also depends on how much you know about exercise.

Some professional prizefighters (mma) spend more time doing their own shit than to work out at a gym. IE swinging a sledge hammer at a tire.

Im motivated by all the ass I see at my gym.

home hands down.

my equipment:
a hill behind my house
one jump rope that never gets used.
one chin up bar in my computer room
all kinds of tables and chairs used to add weight to pushups, and to stick my feet under for sit ups.

I do steep inclined pushups with a backpack on, pull ups, sit ups and run up and down a big hill right beside my house.

I want a couple of kettlebells, but so far everything is going great.

I used to work out at gyms for years, but when I look back, I am so happy not to be caught up in gymfag city.

do whatever you want. I stole a key card from a hotel that features free local gym amenities in my hometown. free gym membership. might work for you too

Here's the equipment I have at home:
- Pull up bar
- kettlebell

Gyms are too expensive, and too far away.

look for a recreational center near you..its free for me. but do research before you go out and look like a dumb ass.

how could that work? those key cards must have unique codes on them. when one turns up missing the staff or management could simply remove the key code from the system.

I have:
An Olympic Bar
2 45 lb plates
2 25 lb plates
2 10 lb plates
2 5 lb plates
Cantilever pullup bar (btw, FUCK THESE THINGS. I'm well under the recommended 200 lbs, it was positioned correctly, I wasn't dicking around, and it put a huge fucking hole over my door frame. I'm gonna lose a big chunk of my security deposit now, fuckfuckfuckfuck).

So I'm basically stuck with a bunch of olympic lifts, and as a result my deltoids, trapezoids, triceps, and lower back have gotten a lot bigger/stronger. I miss my SQUATZ and benchpress though =/.

oh, right, the original topic:
I prefer gyms, but I'm in a densely populated area, so the major ones like Gold's or 24 hour are waaay too packed, and so far I haven't found a hole-in-the-wall one that doesn't have just a bunch of machines, isn't trainer/client-only, or cost a ton.

A home gym + nearby parks + improvisation is ok and has its benefits, but I can't seem to get as good of a workout in, and there's just nowhere near enough room to get all the equipment I'd want, and something about being in a [good] gym removes a lot of distractions.

the hotel doesnt have their own gym, so they have gym memberships with all the rec centers in the city. all you do is lend the front desk clerk at the gym your key card until you leave. you need that to get back to your hotel room rite? wink wink

Maybe you should have positioned the contact points over joists instead of 1/4 inch of plaster.

Well yeah, if the option was available I would've done so. At first I considered waiting until I got a hold of some plywood or something to, at the very least, distribute the force over a much wider area. But I decided I should just do some smaller tests with an ever-increasing amount of weight, always looking and listening for any indication of potential failure.

It appeared as though the majority of the weight was applied downward, on the top of the frame, and I didn't notice any warning signs when I was testing at the lower weights (I actually got couple sets of 10 reps in, had no problems at first), the failure was pretty sudden, and was probably the result of a small shift in my bodyweight.

The manual (if you can call it that) made no mention of that possibility, so I figured they knew what they were doing. Oops.
