First, make a fist. Thumb ALWAYS goes on the outside of the fist, under your first and middle finger. When you're keeping your guard up, keep the fist a little unclenched, or at least relaxed; being loose until the moment of impact will give you more power.
Different styles will tell you different things, but you probably want to aim to hit your opponent with the knuckles of your first and middle finger; leading with your little finger can be dangerous (many boxers break their little finger like this).
For a powerful cross, lead with your hips. In other words, push with your hips, then your shoulder, and finally throw out the arm itself. It feels unnatural to some at first, but every martial artist will tell you that this is the best technique for a powerful cross, as you are using your bodyweight, rather than just your shoulder muscles. This part can take practise to get right.
Follow through. If your punch ends where the opponent's face is, it won't do as much damage as if you aimed a foot behind where his face is.
Finally, get your guard back up. Leaving your arm in mid-air will result in you losing a fight, if your opponent knows what he is doing.
