I just did a mile in 12 minutes, 30 seconds. How pathetic am I?

This was my 3rd run in 3 days, which also means it was my 3rd run in probably 3 years (I don't run a lot). I only walked for 10% of it.

I'd like to start doing HIIT, but I don't think I'd have the stamina for it right now. I wouldn't get through the first spring. What's the best way to bring my stamina and speed up? Just keep doing this? I'm going to try and do it at least 5 times a week this summer.

How much do you weigh?

190 lbs, 5'11.5" (I don't know why they won't just say I'm 6'... bastards.

By the way, I weighed 240 9 months ago. I lost that by just weight lifting, but this seems to be the lowest I can go without doing cardio, which is why I'm starting.

I didn't even attempt HIIT until I could run 2 miles in 17ish.
But yeah, the best way to increase stamina is to try and keep running/jogging a little longer and faster. Even if you don't get the mile time you want, keep running afterwards.

I still have trouble doing more than 10 minutes of HIIT or so.

Alright, thanks. I'll keep going.

Any estimate on how long it will take me to get to that point? Weeks? Months? ...years?

Don't start off running a mile at first. Start with running a full half mile without stopping. Do it for about a week and just build up from there.

I can already do the full half mile, after that is when I slow down for a short bit, then pick it back up for the rest.

Should I just keep it at a half mile and concentrate on increasing the speed for that half mile?

its best not to focus on speed right away. ive found that if you just do it. and keep doing it. and focus on something other then the fact that you are going slow your time will increase. also if you can find a relaly long ass street or something and try to run every other block. best if donw with a street with hills or something in that nature. thats what i did and i can get one ion 6:17.83. i used to be doing them in like 10 minutes not like 7 months ago.

I run on a treadmill at home... so... Just keep increasing distance or time, or gradually increase the machine's speed?

Run outside as much as you can. You don't use as many muscles running on a treadmill than running outside.
