I recently just started ATG squating, a guy told me in my gym it's not worth it because it puts too much pressure on your knees. is this true?

your knees are strongest fully extended and fully compressed. doing partial squats puts more strain on your knees. make sure when you go ATG don't pause at the bottom though.

There you go. Get Starting Strength and read the first chapter. It explains in depth how squatting to parallel involves your hamstring and quadricep muscle groups equally, and therefore balances the shear forces on your knees
