is there an easy way for me to keep using deep breaths instead of of lots of shallow breaths? I can only do it manually, never subconsciously.

When doing what?

For general purposes, you should never even feel like your breathing is too shallow. During cardio, same deal. If you do feel like your breathing is shallow even at your target heart rate, then...doctor. You may have mild asthma or some such.

I do have mild asthma. People on /fit/ know everything I swear.

Does breathing deep eventually become ingrained if I do enough excercise?

If you do breathing exercises routinely, maybe you can make better habits

Google "breathing" and/or take a look at:
https://www.amsa.org/healingthehealer/breathing.cfm

There's a lot of pages about learning better breathing, I think it's worthwhile even if not having a problem, myself
