LITTLE BUSTERS !!cYRK7ZeKVyk
Hey, martial artists of /fit/

During the summer, I'm gonna form an "all martial arts" club with several of my friends at my university. We all know a little bit of various shit and we can get a club charter for it if we get enough people. We plan to use the martial arts studio in our university gym every week for practice sessions.

Philosophically, it's going to be like MMA or Jeet Kune Do. We plan to learn every discipline from the various forms of kickboxing to eastern and western wrestling techniques. And we will only use the most useful of each. Screw black belts and testing.

We all know a little bit. I'm a kickboxer from an American studio, my friend knows Muay Thai and boxing, his friend knows catch wrestling, one of us knows Tae Kwon Do, and so on. There's no money profitting or anything, it's run by peer interest (though everyone should buy their own equipment). I mean, why not? After cardio and hitting the weight room, we might as well make use of the martial arts studio.

Once we're good, I'm seriously trying to get everyone into proposing a formal challenge to the following clubs in our university: Tae Kwon Do. Kung Fu. Boxing. Judo. Taekukmusul. Aikido. Under MMA rules.

Is this awesome y/n?

I wanna be the very best
like no one ever was
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my cause

I will travel across the land
searching far and wide
Each pokemon to understand
the power that's inside

Pokemon! its you and me
I know its my destiny,
Pokemon! Oh you're my best friend
in a world we must defend
Pokemon! a heart so true
Our courage will pull us through,

You teach me and I'll teach you,
Pokemon! gotto catch'em all

Every challenge allong the way
with courage I will face.
I will battle every day
to claim my rightful place.
Come with me,
the time is right,
there's no better team.
Arm in arm we'll win the fight!
It's always been our dream!

>> LITTLE BUSTERS !!cYRK7ZeKVyk
>>166767

Why when you put it that way...

I already have experience in kickboxing. Now we're just trying to form a good place to foster techniques outside of our background. I'd love to learn wrestling, Judo, etc and hear from the actual users who utilize the most important aspects rather than the instructors who make money off it.

Mastery will be earned slowly with practice, but we're going to be honest and obey physics and human biology here - not all moves are worth mastering. Bull shit Kung Fu alone must have over 80% of it's techniques completely useless and for show.

Then let's see what's better in a fight, our own hybrid style or traditional TKD, Kung Fu, Judo, etc.

In other words, half of the techniques that make some of these martial arts (Aikido in particular) effective aren't allowed? A good number of Aikido techniques use the fingers or atemi (strikes) to the eyes, throat, crotch, etc. Not allowing those to be used is like telling a boxer "try against my wrestling, but no hitting"

Also, you can't just "master" or even really "get good at" a set of irrelevant techniques. At best you'll be able to perform them on a completely complacent victim, but once someone starts struggling and hitting back the chances of doing specific "techniques" like throws and grabs goes down to about nil unless you're a high-ranking student/teacher of the art. Going back again to Aikido, the only idiot to really try and do it in MMA was a second dan, which meant he was just about at the level where he could teach it. Because of how Aikido is structured his ability to use it in a real fight would have been minimal at best, like against some random drunk idiot at a bar. Going against a professional fighter would have been, and was, pretty much suicide. To try and say that as individuals you know what moves are "useful" and what aren't despite maybe spending a year or so training in them is like saying I know what's best for China because I toured there for a few months.

you're an idiot. almost all grappling arts train with full resistance from their partner, and my friends in wrestling for 2-3 years have dropped plenty of people on their necks in streetfights
>> LITTLE BUSTERS !!cYRK7ZeKVyk
Lol, /fit/ trolls coming out.

Like I said, we all have backgrounds in various things. We will spar and teach other the most useful techniques of each martial art.

Taekukmusul = Korean Krav Maga with more emphasis on kicks. It's pronounced "Tie cool moo sow."

Also, BJJ is pretty good... if you're going against someone who doesn't know anything about the ground game. Look at MMA history - the Gracies and their BJJ got owned once wrestlers got in the game. The person in my OP image is a catch wrestler who owned 4 of the Gracies and then got owned himself by a heavy striker.
>> Anonymous
>>168654

Just because one amazingly skilled catch wrestler beat 4 of the gracies, does not mean catch wrestling> bjj...

it's not like he's the only catch wrestler they fought against, durr.

also, your assumption of bjj being only useful against people who have no ground game is pathetic. obviously if you're going against someone else with a good ground base it's going to be harder, but then it all boils down to who is basically more skilled and what the other guy's ground base is in (i.e. a BJJ guy vs a wrestler, a wrestler will be more prone to staying off his back and exposing it if they go to the ground)
>> LITTLE BUSTERS !!cYRK7ZeKVyk
>>At best you'll be able to perform them on a completely complacent victim, but once someone starts struggling and hitting back the chances of doing specific "techniques" like throws and grabs goes down to about nil unless you're a high-ranking student/teacher of the art.

Exactly. That's what makes effective martial arts different from ineffective ones, like kung fu, Aikido, and so on.
>> Anonymous
>>168649

I'm referring more to the Oriental arts such as Aikido or Tai Chi that teach movements and techniques against initially complacent opponents so the attacker can gain a better understanding of what the technique truly requires.

I wrestled for two years and fuck yeah the stuff is useful, unless you go up against someone who has seen wrestling before. In styles such as Aikido or Tai Chi, it really doesn't matter if you've seen it before or not, the only way to truly "neutralize" some of the attacks is simply to have deeply studied the art itself to understand its intricacies.

Exactly, I actually didn't mean what I said, I was just drawing you into typing that so you'd answer the previous incorrect statement: "BJJ > all martial arts."
>> Anonymous
>>168673

Untrue. Wrestling, BJJ, etc, have a far quicker learning curve than arts such as Aikido, Tai Chi, etc. Add to it that in events where the arts were compared (UFC, etc) the rules were very specifically in favor of BJJ, wrestling, etc. Like I've previously said, a lot of techniques in most Asian martial arts were to kill or disfigure. The animal styles of Kung Fu, for example, rely specifically on gouges and strikes to the throat. That kind of stuff would get you arrested/universally hated for using excessive force in what was pretty much a sporting event even in its early inceptions. The same goes with Aikido, all of the techniques are supposed to end in either eye gouges, bone breaks, or death of the attacker.

>>168670
>>Just because one amazingly skilled catch wrestler beat 4 of the gracies, does not mean catch wrestling> bjj...

I respectfully disagree and would like to bring forth the idea that individual user is far more important than the style itself. I don't recall his name, but isn't there some Karateka/Judoka that's right now very impressive in UFC?

There's no point in learning to fight if you're not in it to kill. That's what fighting is all about, killing. Any other way it's practiced is for fairies with low self-esteem that want to pretend they're strong. "But I want to test myself against other people!" Bullshit, learn to play tennis or go bowling, just stop being a MMA wannabe warrior.
>> Anonymous
I'd like to add one last thing before I leave. Simply that a grand majority of BJJ grapples can be broken by simply grabbing the aggressor's finger or two and pulling back on it sharply. Look at the current list of fouls for the UFC on Wikipedia.

1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9-18, and 22 are all relevant to Aikido ALONE. Let alone the countless other Oriental Martial Arts that I've not studied. 22 especially.
>> Anonymous
>>168682

These ancient Eastern martial arts are pretty damn useless. Like Aikido. So the moment your opponent is aware of you, what are you going to do? Try to grab his hand and do 10 steps worth of action? Aikido might be useful against someone who have no clue you're going to do shit to their hand.

Kung fu is useless too. There's no power behind Kung Fu strikes. They don't torque their waist like boxers and kickboxers do. There's no science behind it. Kung Fu in the 70s got raped pretty badly by exhibition matches against Muay Thai, which was by far more effective.

Stop trying to justify your lack of self-confidence. If you want to compete in something, go do something peaceful, like a sport. Leave the perfectly good fighting arts out of your ego issues. The only reason to learn how to fight is if your life depends on it. Go join the military. Become a police officer. Lift some weights. Learn a new sport. You're a civilian, and anything that you're learning to do now is pretty much useless when someone is intent on harming you. Yes, even your gay ass MMA. Go learn something that is going to protect you, your family, and your friends. Everything else is useless shit to fulfill your warrior fantasy and to compare how big your testicles are. Oh yea, not samefag as the aikido guy. Aikido is even bigger bullshit than what you're trying to do. You just earned a sage I'm so mad at you MMA faggots.
>> LITTLE BUSTERS !!cYRK7ZeKVyk

>> Anonymous
>>168714
Aikido doesn't work that way. You don't grab for things, you make a connection, whether it be by blocking with the forearm or otherwise, then rip their hand/shoulder/elbow off. Again, your apparent lack of understanding of Aikido has caused you to have a misinformed opinion of it. I bet you believe that all the demonstrations with the attackers purposely rolling and falling before the technique is done makes it bullshit too, right? Completely ignoring that it's a DEMO if they didn't do so they'd most likely get something broken?

As for your "Kung Fu sucks" bit. I repeat: "Hey, boxer, fight me, but no punching. LOL BOXING SUCKS!"

>>168747
Again, that would be the style being taught wrong. Almost all Oriental Martial Arts started as a way to kill in trying situations (ie war). Having a teacher who teaches it elsewise is simply going to dilute the style much the same way that fighting in a rules-based fight dilutes the style. There are no rules in street fights, you disable the attacker any way you can and either run or call the cops.

>>168807
I would first like to apologize for not using a tripcode, or at the very least identifying myself in my posts, but that was not me. I have nothing but respect for MMA and the ideas you're trying to espouse. The problem is that it's incredibly inefficient. I've dabbled in BJJ, Wrestling, Boxing, Tai Chi, Jow Ga, Aikido (my current style), Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan and Kyokushin Karate, and Kendo. However, I am by no means sufficiently informed to decide which techniques from which art is the most effective simply because "dabbling" allows me nowhere near the level of expertise or understanding of each individual art to do so.

THIS.

Once you have a certain level of boxing/striking/takedown profficiency, the rest is all about your fighting instinct.

Half of the martial arts stuff goes out of the window in a brawl... with only the very basics (guard and footwork) remaining (provided you have a really good grasp on them) instinctively.

The rest is all about how quick and versatile you are.

I.e. grabbing bottles and chairs and cups and shoes and bags and dogs and children to use as defensive or offensive tools without even thinking about it.

>> Anonymous
>>169732

Yeah. I've only had to do this shit once in my life because some guy couldn't handle being repeatedly counterpointed in a little argument and instead thought bumrushing me was the logical option.

I fought like a woman, but I basically won. I dug my nails into his forehead and pulled down as hard as I could and then spit in his eyes (he was on top of me) and started open palming the side of his head near his ears and he stopped and then started calling me a bitch and a pussy, etc., etc. But the point is I wasn't ready for a fight, nor did I want to fight. I had assault and battery committed against me and I did the cheapest shit imaginable to make it stop. Funny thing, this was at work a few years ago and I immediately reported it to the boss who called the police. They thought *I* was the one who attacked the other guy because his forehead was bleeding and I looked basically fine, but I ended up pressing charges and he spent two weeks in the county jail and had to do 72 hours of community service after his jail time.

As much as it might sound like an "LOL INTERNET" story, it's true, and it hurt some relationships I had with people at work, but I did the right thing. Asshole tough guys deserve what he got. Since then, I never leave home without pepper spray and a steel D-ring key chain to use as a punching aid. I'd rather be considered a pussy than get my ass kicked, because I'm not a fighter.

I was merely telling a true story to illustrate the point that if you're attacked without provocation, you have the right to do anything to protect yourself.

And that guy did deserve his jail time, probably more than two weeks, but the Judge was nice to him. He was a criminal for what he did, he assaulted someone.

Switch judo and boxing, and tkd and capoeira and you're set. You're lucky you have those clubs. My school tried to set up a MMA club, but we're extremely low on people who are into that type of thing.

Also: You have a boxing club? I didn't know anyone even fucking boxed anymore. If your friend is a licensed boxer, he'll probably kick the shit out of anyone in those other clubs. Not because they're bad styles, but because usually people who join university martial arts "clubs" suck. Anyways, good luck with your hump & grind or whatever they call MMA fighting.
