Milk in the morning, milk in the evening. Anonymous
So I thought I'd experiment with restricting myself a bit when it comes to food.

My logic told me that milk and sour milk both should technically be enough to constitute meals - milk has 3.3 grams of protein for every 100ml and somewhere between 4 and 5 grams of carbohydrates, in skimmed milk totalling 32 kcal. Milk has the added benefit of vitamin D and Calcium, and sour milk (whose nutritional values are otherwise about the same) has an added bacterial benefit.

So I figured, I should be able to replace my breakfast with a shitload of milk, ditto my last meal of the day (because these are inconsistent, I tend to think of it as "only milk and sour milk after 9"). I eat two or three big meals as the day goes on anyway, so I have plenty of other sources for nutrients, so that shouldn't be a problem. I end up drinking in excess of a liter of milk every day; I suppose it constitutes about one half of my daily protein intake.

Here's the interesting thing, though: I've been hearing that a reasonable weight loss plan is two pounds per week. Well, between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, my weight dropped by about three pounds. I thought it might have been the scale, which is old and perhaps not all that reliable, but now (Thursday morning) it's gone down another three. Now, I can understand that I used up a lot of energy on Tuesday and Wednesday - Tuesday, I had two and a half hors of martial arts practice, on Wednesday I spent 10+ hours loitering around drunk - but since the beginning of time I've always gotten everything back, or nearly everything.

I'm alarmed. I mean, yes, I wanted to lose weight, but I don't want to lose muscle mass and I don't want my health to suffer. Does anyone have experience with this sort of shit?

tl;dr HALP I'm losing weight ten times "too fast" ;_;

No fiber? Enjoy your diarrhea, dehydration, and death.
>> KC !!KydeY7G+xZY
Yeah, i wouldn't really suggest cutting out a meal and replacing it with liquid.
There are other ways to help good fat loss. What do you normally eat?

> fiber
I get it during my three other meals. Well, some of that is starch, because potatoes are a staple food for me. Pasta's also present. So basically I should imo be getting at least enough fiber to bind down what I eat during those non-milk meals, because the foods I eat have a relative lot of fiber.

> diarrhea
I have no problems shitting.

> dehydration
I don't see how this applies. I mean, most of milk is water and I drink a lot of water anyway, out of habit.

> death
This is the problem. I don't feel unhealthy. A bit hungry in the morning (I eat lunch at 12, so morning means before 12), but that'll happen. I don't feel, you know, weak or anything. The only signal I'm getting that something could be wrong is that my weight is dropping like Little Boy from the Enola Gay.

Oh, btw, and I started at 81 kg, most of it probably was fat, I just know that just because fat is there doesn't mean it's the first thing my body cuts.

Like I mentioned before, it'll be potatoes or pasta based a lot of the time. I eat pretty generous helpings. I try to get in a lot of vegetables and fruit too. If I eat meat, it'll be poultry or fish, mostly, because personally I like the taste better. The meat is the only thing I really stop myself from gobbling down.

Ahh! Oh noez!
That's your problem. Right there. I can almost guarantee it. Little known fact:
Starch is like sugar packets
As soon as you digest, shit as soon as they hit your mouth, starch starts breaking down into sugar.
It has a high glycemic index, meaning huge insulin spike, high blood pressure, and here's the main part: increased fat storage. Then, the crash. Much like a sugar rush. You get decreased blood flow and insulin deficiency, then you feel all cloggy headed, too.

dude I used to have glasses like in OP's pic

> increased fat storage
But wouldn't that mean I'd lose even more weight? And what would you suggest I eat?

Oh, did you mean what I normally eat in the morning and evening? Morning would be a bowl of whaddyacallit, oatmeal, and evening pretty much whatever I lay my hands on (sometimes I make soup. Sometimes I eat five sandwiches). Pasta and potatoes are what I'm eating now, at lunch and at the other meal or meals (I have an irregular schedule, with the martial arts sessions often taking up a notorious amount of time, so usually I only have time for one meal besides lunch; I try to get two though).

Also, in your opinion, will a weight loss of two or three pounds a day be unhealthy no matter what? I didn't even start out as *that* fat, so it's not just shedding-ripe fat layers dropping off.

It's impossible to lose fat without losing muscle mass. Remember this.

If you want a nice tone body while losing fat? Tough shit. You'll have to lose fat and muscle mass first, then work on gaining nothing but muscle mass back later.

Look over the methods that body builders have used, they are tested and true. If you can substitute meal for milk then I'm positive you can do this.

I have no idea where in god's name he got this from. Muscles don't atrophy unless used less than whatever they're currently at needs....

>>97553
What I mean is your diet in general is loaded with high GI carbs, you'll store fat a lot easier, the fat from any foods you're eating.
That's your problem lol

We can't build muscle and lose fat at the same time. Anabolism, the process of building muscle, requires more calories taken in than expended, plus appropriate resistance exercise to stimulate the many cells involved in muscle development, and adequate rest to allow repair and growth of muscle tissue.

Weight loss involves fewer calories taken in than expended, so in this deprivation mode, one would not have the excess calories required to build muscle.

> It's impossible to lose fat without losing muscle mass. Remember this.

Okay, true, but I don't want to lose significantly more muscle mass than a slower weight loss... um... plan would make me lose. Oh and I don't want to get sick and die either. So it's not that I want to do the impossible and lose no muscle while shedding ten kilos or more of body fat, I just want to do the losing in a healthy way. Not "the healthiest possible way", just a way that's reasonably healthy.

And now that you mention it, I *am* more concerned about overall health than muscle mass. As I mentioned, I do martial arts, so I'm constantly subjected to a strength standard and will be beaten back up to it if I fall below. Only if I want to bulk significantly I might have a bit of a problem, because I don't have very good gym access. I live on the outskirts of town and I simply can't fit an hour of gym plus travel time into my weekly schedule very many times, plus I'm penniless. I'll have to do bodyweight exercises at home, mostly. Currently working towards handstand pushups.

I'ts not 100% caloric intake.
Eat a hell of a lot of food, but get no protein. Workout and see where you go.
You completely forgot about macronutrients. Fat , carbs, and protein play a way more important role.

>>97606
Good, the martial arts will help keep your muscles where you're at, don't fret that one. It's really mostly about the fat storage you're going to hit.
Like I said, you're having a HELL of a lot of high GI carbs, that's your source of fattening

Oh - Then just figure out a few things to throw into your daily diet (not the one you're on, but with the things you normally eat) and then grab supliments for things you seem to be missing from it (fiber, vitamins, etc.)

So long as you do that you won't really have to 'diet' much. It'll be a lifechange that's easy to keep doing and one that'll help you lose weight naturally, so long as you're not a glutton - If you live in the USA learn to moderate your food in take, we all have that problem ;)

Well, I will be putting my muscles to use a lot, both in martial arts and the tricking I do at home in the summer, so I'm not terribly worried even if I lose a bit, I'll get it back pretty quick.

> What I mean is your diet in general is loaded with high GI carbs
What foods would you suggest? Thing is, pasta and taters are easy to store and make, and I've been eating them for a long time. I don't particularly look forward to starting taking in protein shakes or eating a dozen egg whites a day. Which is not to say I won't, I'd just prefer a more "normal" variant.

Not in the USA, but Finland is close behind you in the obesity charts, so the mentality is similar.

Yeah, the milk thing actually was to stop me from being a pig, but ah, I can do that without having to resort to these measures, I should think.

I was once 250lbs at 5ft7 and I do live in the USA.

I decided that I'll turn my situation round full circle by losing the weight and becoming a body builder - It worked really well. I learned that if you chew your food slower (I remember it feeling REALLY awkward chewing it so slow) you'll eat a lot less than you normally would. Also throw in a fruit between meals so you can't stomach as much whatever else you eat. This should keep you eating the things you already love to eat without worry of gaining weight.

I decided to use this method because it seemed like the best sure-shot way to lose the weight and keep it off. A lot of people try to change their diets completely, but eventually end up eating the things they love. There's nothing wrong with that so long as you learn to savor the flavor and not to eat as much. Most people get the mentality that you have to eat a lot to enjoy it a lot. That's not the case!

Now I'm 178 and fairly tone!

Oh, awesome. A tricker! I'm a traceur myself, but anywho...

That's the hell that comes with foods like that. You love it because it's easy to prepare and such, but it's not good.
You don't need to go crazy and suck out egg whites like a baby salamander, or guzzle down protein shakes like some paranoid meathead.

Get your carbs from vegetables mainly, with a decent amount of fruit. Get protein from meat.
Check out the paleolithic diet, it's total win.

Anon makes a good point.
Eating slower means you're going to eat less. That's a huge tip right there. Also, by having low fat snacks (like fruit as he said), you can help lower the amount you'll eat at your next big meal.
Thanks for that

I'll try the paleolithic diet then. Or at least an adapted version; I'm not willing to completely cut out dairy. Grains should be easy. Potatoes, ok.

The difficult part will be that I'm pretty bad with vegetables. I know that they can be made into soup and that's about it, for the most part - I do want to have a warm meal now and then. Fruits, again, are probably easy.

Tell me one thing, though: what about fiber? I don't particularly fancy driving myself into horrid diarrhea.
>> KC !!KydeY7G+xZY
I agree with dairy. It's more ...optional. It's not necessary, but not really detrimental.
I know what you mean. I've had a few days where I've had mainly fruit....Not good days.

Just stick with meat and vegetables.
Hot vegetables are great, too. Like it says, avoid beans, but getting a bag of mixed vegetables is usually good.
I almost always heat my vegetables, I hate them cold.
If you stick with it, even with at least some of it, you'll be better off. Tell me how it goes

I've done this now and then. I steam them, usually with leek or something for flavor.

> Tell me how it goes
I don't know how I'm supposed to do that, but hey, I'll use my tripfag name so you can at least recognize that if I do make a thread about it later or summat.

If you use AIM, you can message me at Whoa KC

And yeah, the bags that are mixed and can me microwaved in the bag are awesome. Convenient, fast, and delicious, all while maintaining health. Good stuff
