I've got an odd health concern, /fit/.

Often when trying to go to sleep, I hear imaginary noises. As I drift off and am in that wonderful place between asleep and awake, I hear something fucking loud - sometimes someone is calling my name, sometimes just a crash or a scream or an explosion - and my whole body flinches violently and I'm awake, with my heart racing. This happens once every 3 nights, easily, and has happened twice in the same night before.

Is my brain dying?

Are you living in a ghetto?

Shit's completely normal. You're just going into sleep paralysis and your body is in alert mode while this happens. It can cause you to have auditory hallucinations while you are halfway between dreaming and awake. Just ignore it.

Whatever you do, do NOT look under your bed.

you're either completely fine or begin to suffer from schizophrenia.

Just to be on the safe side (in case it IS shizophrenia), don't do hallucinatory drugs (pot included). They can aggravate a low-grade case into full-fledged dementia.

you're fine, as long as it only happens when you're trying to go to sleep.

Happens to me daily.

I've only experienced this once. It was someone's voice, from the darkness near my bed, loudly whispering my name. Scared the shit out of me.

Exploding Head Syndrome? Of all the recurring neurological(?) conditions, at least you got one with an awesome name.

This and the OP sound exactly like what I experience. It happens more often when I'm exhausted, and has happened to me while "awake" and extremely sleep-deprived.
