I've gotten pretty close to being able to do them. I got really flexible from wushu, and most of that came from just stretching before practice. Splits like those in OP's picture are really hard for guys, but side splits aren't so much. My advice would be to try and warm up all the muscles in your legs evenly and then just go as far down as you can and hold for a few minutes. Then do the other side. If you do it before/after a workout that involves a lot of aerobic stuff (ie running) you will notice a difference after a few weeks.
