Sup /fit/? I've always been a casual exerciser...I just tried to maintain a regular shape and avoid fast food, etc.

My issue is that for the last eight months or so, I've been mostly on bed rest with a pretty bad knee injury. I ended up with screws and a plate in it and they will never be removed. I just recently got the go-ahead to safely begin exercising regularly from my physical therapist, but she says I should NEVER attempt any sort of real running or jogging again in my life unless it was some kind of dire situation.

Ok, so that part is explained. The other issue is that I gained weight from being so inactive and I need to slim down again. My PT recommended that I do cardio on a treadmill due to the low impact and do something like walking at 3 MPH (20 minute miles). I was wondering how effective do you think this will be for weight loss? People have told me walking doesn't burn enough calories..and other people have told me that the only thing that matters is that you cover a decent distance when walking and you will burn calories just fine. My PT basically said the latter, but what does /fit/ think?

Just a reminder:

Can't do running and am currently not recommended to attempt light jogging, just walking.

Can't do HIIT or anything like that.

Can't do any sort of weight training that puts too much stress on the legs.

Definitely can't do any sort of intense sports, but I'd probably be fine with swimming or really casual tennis.

running a distance will burn the same number of calories as walking the same distance will (DURING the exercise).

DICLAIMER: your metabolism will remain higher for longer with jogging, you will burn more fat while jogging as a result of more calories burned, and jogging will overall save more time.

Yeah, I figured as much. I'm thinking in time I will be cleared to handle jogging, maybe up to 5 MPH, but right now my knee is still pretty much healing. Time doesn't seem to be THAT big of an issue, because if I cover about 3 miles at the rate I was recommended, it will still only take an hour. Plus, my actual conditioning has slipped so much that trying to jump right into jogging would probably just be too tiring for me at this point in time (when I first started PT, we found out my leg muscles actually started to atrophy from being inactive for so long).

The metabolism thing is pretty much unavoidable, though. Best I can do is tailor my diet to be effective at keeping my metabolism up in addition to walking. Thanks.
