fartleks are like intervals (at least this is how i know them) set up a course, let's say 3 miles. and random points in the course pick 2 spots, when you hit that first spot surge and keep that pace up until you hit the second spot you picked. basically you just make your own interval wherever you want and however long you want it to be on the course of your run, at least that's how it was told to me by my coach. (am a junior in highschool, run cross country and 3200 and 1600m in track)
