I was a cross country runner during high school.
I showed up to practice the first day and ran 3 miles, I had expected to be given advise (leg position, breathing methods, how to kick your feet ect...) but all the instruction I was given was to keep my back straight, head up, and pace myself.
That is the only instruction you need on marathon running, at first you'll kick your own ass going for 3 miles, but if you keep adding distance eventually 3 will be nothing, then 4 will be nothing, then you'll be able to run for 5 miles up/down hills.
Just get out there and do it, running isn't as complex as weight lifting- remember the human body was built bipedally to run long distances efficiently.

Don't run on a treadmill unless you have some wierd reason. I've been running most of my life and the difference between treadmills and solid running are monumental.

I could run 12 miles on a treadmill (flat run) and get tired. If I tried running on a track I could barely make 5. The same goes for programming a mill for hills and running hills outside. Maybe its just me, but treadmills are easy-mode.
