Yes, a lot of the time, its mental. I know it sounds fat-fetched but try to follow me. The times you run normal, its probably not a good day for you but you feel like you must do it. The times you "sprint", you know youre going for a burn out, and you push to the edge that you think you can manage.
tl;dr, get yourself psyched for run if that makes sense, get some rest, stretch, and those pounds will be off before you know it
