Hey /fit/, femanon here.

About 9 months ago I decided that I finally became frustrated with the fact that I had, to some degree, let myself go. Having felt overwhelmed by full time school and work, I stopped watching what I ate so much and seldom found myself exercising. While I was only between 140-145lbs, I decided that I wanted to lose some weight.

I began restricting my calorie intake to 1200-1500 a day, making sure to maintain a well-balanced diet. I also began jogging 3 miles about 3-4 times a week, and doing what I could at my house (pushups, crunches, SQUATZZZ). However, after (I'm estimating) a couple of months, I noticed that more of my hair seemed to be falling out than normal. After another month or two, I stopped getting my period.

I lost the desired weight over the course of 5-6 months; a slow and steady pace, and I am now right around 120-125. As I said, I always made to get a balanced diet, and took vitamins as well. Now that I have maintained this weight for over 3 months, and these problems remain (no period, hair still falling out), I'm very confused as to why my body is freaking out? If I'm neither underweight nor receiving inadequate nutrition, why is my body reacting as though I am starving myself?

While I'm by no means bald, I still can recognize that I have much less hair than I always have before. Also, even the hair that I do have seems very weak/damaged, to the point where I am considering just cutting it very short to hide this.

And while I can't make the claim that I miss my period, it's still disconcerting to me that it has packed up its bags and hit the road. Also, I'm 22, so it's not as though it hasn't had plenty of time to establish itself.

Halp?

Picture unrelated, but hot.

I'm sort of, well, poor. Unless this is extremely serious, I can't really afford to see a doctor.

OP here, forgot to mention that I'm 5'7; proving that I'm not underweight.

You're not getting enough nutrients. Upgrade your calorie intake.

I've been eating around 1800-2000 for over 3 months.

Keep doing what your doing, but more calorie intake. See what happens.

obviously your diet isn't balanced properly if you're hair is falling out and becoming dry and brittle. I suggest you take a high-quality liquid multivitamin that supplies your body with the proper amino acids that you seem to be missing.

Your hair ultimately reflects the overall condition of your body. If your body is healthy and well-nourished, your hair will be your shining glory. If you are having any health problems or suffering from any nutritional deficiencies, your hair may stop growing or show damage or become brittle. If your body is in good health, you can maximize your genetic growth cycle through taking the proper blend of amino acids and B-vitamins.

TL;DR - You underestimate how to have a proper balanced diet.

Post your diet and a picture. No face needed, just torso.
>> Anonymous
Is it possible that you're pregnant, and also have female pattern baldness?
>> Red !KV/D4sCHBI
I'm amazed you Americans aren't all dead with your shitty health system.
That said, yes, post your diet. It could be you're not getting enough of certain things, like protein. Hell, it could be with cutting calories and exercising you're burning too many calories and need to eat 2500+ cal.
Or, you may have a disease unrelated to your diet and NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR. I'm talking cancer.
>> Anonymous
You're either under-eating or over-exercising. Choose one.
>> Anonymous
One femanon to another: more protein if your diet is at all shy of it, more rest, less stress.
>> Anonymous
I'm thirding the request to post your diet.

If you are, as you say, consuming enough for adequate nutrition, it's probable that you have an underlying disorder which is causing you to be losing nutrition. This would account for the cessation of your menstrual cycle as well as the hair loss.

Are you noticing an increase in the amount of body hair you have? The fine, downy stuff you find on your shoulders and face? Are you experiencing cramping in your hands and feet? Have you noticed any unusual (possibly itchy) red spots on your ankles, calves, feet, hands, or around your groin? Are the whites of your eyes normal colored?

There could be a lot going on here, honestly. You should really consider going to see a doctor.
>> Anonymous
>>108750

What the hell does our health system have to do with this?

Also, I assume your fat intake has been between 0 and 1 percent? Your body NEEDS healthy fats in order to survive, otherwise your skin will get crappy, as will your hair. Hell, it might also have something to do with your period.

That said, post your diet so we can see for sure. If you won't post your diet, just make sure you are getting like 20% of your calories from fat, and make sure those fats are mono- or poly- unsaturated fats. They're also called omega 3 and 6, DHT, and probably 50 thousand other things. But you need them.
>> Anonymous
Fuck, losing your PERIOD means you're either severely undernourished, obese or really sick.

Eat more or go see a doctor.

I have a diet high in vegetables, fruit, fiber, wheat/whole grains and no meat other then fish. I drink water and decaffeinated teas of different types, but mostly green tea with echenesia. (hot teas) I have a juicer and make my own blends. I never drink sodas or sugary drinks. I don't chew gum, I don't eat candy (aside form dark chocolate from time to time.)

The food I make I make myself and I use whole/raw/organic fruits vegg.

I'm working towards becoming a nutritionist, but if I don't answer you questions right away or at all its because I'm busy with finals. Sorry.

>>108785

Assuming you eat enough fish, it looks like your diet is just fine, other than the slim potential for mercury poisoning (if you eat fish too much).

Yeah, see a doctor.
>> Anonymous
>>108785

More protein. Anons have guessed correctly, you aren't getting enough fats in your diet. Without ingesting fats there is no way for your body to take in fat-soluble nutrients. You are probably deficient in these, which is causing the hair loss etc.
>> Anonymous
>>108789

I'd have to concur; that's the one thing that jumps out at me with that diet. I'd try adding some chicken, pork and whey protien. AT LEAST 1 gram per pound of body weight.

Yup, more fats, try olive oil, avocado, high good fats. I'd get some proper meat in you too, turkey/chicken.
I had same problem when I lost weight (just the period thing), turned out I had pcos though, so er... yeh. Too many carbs can be bad for pcos, maybe get a doctor to check you out?

If you're not wanting to eat meat you can try alternatives like Kale. Kale is a leaf and it has crazy high levels of protein for a plant. Blueberries have protein too, I believe. Flax Seeds, or an Omega-3 supplement, are going to help with the health of your hair.
>> Anonymous
>>108789
Also agreed, your diet is good but with eating just fish you're not getting enough protein and good fats. (Plus the mercury problem, if you're eating too much tuna or such) If you've a vegetarian/vegan, eat a ton more tofu and shellfish - shrimp are high in protein while low in cal.

You could also be over-exercising. Try reducing your workout by a third while increasing your meat intake.

>>108803
Yeah, I'm not OP, sorry its not me thats loosing me hair. I do eat a lot of flax seeds and I use a lot of soy as a replacement for meat because I don't care for it. The soymilk helps put vitamin D into my system.

Go to a doctor but eat more for the time being. Mainly go for meats and liver. Emphasis on the liver. If you've lost your period something is seriously wrong with your diet. Go find out your body fat percentage if possible.
>> Anonymous
From the looks of your diet, you may not be getting enough protein and calcium. Calcium is very important in a diet, and correct me if I'm wrong, but it does deal with hair folicle growth to some extent. I say drink some more milk, maybe two glasses a day, and see how it goes. I'm going to make an account now, I want people to be able to see when I'm posting. Yay for fitness!

>>108781
yeah, what this guy said.

for some reason girls think healthy == NO FAT IT'S GROSS.

monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated are all necessary for health and life.

eat fat or die. they're called essential fatty acids for a reason you stupid bitch.
>> Anonymous
>>108785
your diet is fucking awful. you have no natural fat sources and you're going to become a nutritionist? what's the bet i know more about nutrition than you do. fucking hell.

nutritionist these days COMPLEX CAAAAAARBS and that's about it. worthless. worse than perverts.
>> Anonymous
okay. i call bullshit on so many things. first of all if you're studying nutrition, you should be able figure out to do a simple fucking calorie calculation. you're 22 with high metabolism and in college so i'm guessing you're busy getting around on campus and shit. so subtract your basal metabolic rate and 3 miles of running from your measly 1800-2000 calories and guess what! you're in the fucking negative. so bull shit you're just trying to "maintain weight."

secondly, YOU LOST YOUR PERIOD. something is obviously wrong. i'd like to see you as a nutritionist advise others to continue their diet regiment after they tell you they lost their period.

thirdly, since you're enrolled in school, YOU HAVE TO HAVE BE INSURED. how hard is it to walk your ass to the university's clinic and get yourself checked. unless you're purposely trying to avoid a checkup because you know that you're doing something wrong.

my diagnosis. you sound like a typical anorexic or are on the way to becoming one. your view on what you think is healthy is obviously skewed especially if you're fucking studying nutrition. i'd consider a psychiatrist/counseling along with a physical.

No. No.
Kale is not high in protein.
Kale is a normal plant. It is not a super plant. It has 2g protein/cup.
You lead a trite and meaningless life.
>> Your grossly unhealthy diet. Doctor
     File :-(, x)
Protein, calcium, and fats. At the very least. Going vegetarian or some other idiotic diet like the one you've put yourself on will kill you or at the very least make you grossly unhealthy after an extended period of time.

Being skinny is unhealthy. Being average is arguably unhealthy. Healthiest is being slightly overweight, which decreases the risk of dead from most diseases except heart disease.

>>Going vegetarian or some other idiotic diet
lol. vegetarians can be just as healthy as omnivores.

I think you have lupus. Seek help immediatley.

OP, that is really bad for you... Losing your period is called amenhorrea, and it happens when you have a severe nutritional deficiency. It weakens your bones, causes the loss of muscle mass (your body essentially 'eats' the muscle you have to regain nutrients that way), and is terrible in the long term.

You need to eat healthy (enough calories, complex carbs, multivitamins [dont overdo those, however]) and exercise moderately until you get your period back.

Good luck...
>> Anonymous
>>109335

Same poster- I forgot, also Recommended Daily Intakes of fiber and protein will be important here also.
>> Anonymous
>>109335

Losing periods also comes for extreme stress. What else is happening in OP's life?
>> Anonymous
OP, when you go to the doctor they will test your blood and maybe give you an ultrasound and a few other things, which will help you determine which vitamin deficiencies you have (or if you're pregnant or have cancer or something); from there you can modify your diet to accommodate them.

You should try eating some liver or something.

If you can't go to a fucking doctor because you are poor (like op said) your health system fails catastrophically.
>> Anonymous
>>109729

If you
1) Have to wait in line for any health care

or

2) Have to pay for health care that you don't use

then your health care system is fail. Just because our government is assraping our current health care system with regulations doesn't mean the premise behind it is superior.

Also, if you don't have health insurance in America, go to an ER some time. See how much of a fight they put up to resist your patronage. That's right, none.
>> Anonymous
>>109744

Oops, forgot to clarify something in #2: There is no free health care. You are paying for it through taxes, period. So if you never have to go to the doctor, you are basically paying for other douchebags to run to the nearest clinic whenever they get a stuffy nose.
>> Anonymous
>>109729
You know why the US is gray? Because each state has its own regulations for free healthcare for those on low income. Theres no "universal" free healthcare, but theres plenty of state free healthcares systems.

Healthcare crisis = Politician bullshit

but then again the only people on 4chan who cry about the US healthcare system are those who aren't in the US, typical
