I guesstimate calories and I've been doing pretty well with the weight loss. Mainly just watching my portions.

1 kilojoule is about 239 calories. In America, we dont use kilojoules. (Spent time abroad, myself, so I've seen both)

1 calorie = 4.184 kilojoules

So who is wrong here? http://www.caloriesperhour.com/tutorial_calories.php seems to vouch for 1:4.184, but can anybody say for certain?

I guess, but otherwise don't bother counting. Big meal = more exercise, that's all.

i don't really count calories, but i keep track of what i eat. if nothing else, it's a good mental exercise, as having to actually write down whatever you eat is a good deterrent from eating foods detrimental to the diet.

I watch them, but don't count. I think around 500 calories is about a meal, and do general estimates to try and stay around that area.

Also try to stay around the numbers for how much per day, and will compensate a bit depending on if it looks like I've eaten too little or too much, erring on the side of whichever I haven't been on. For example, if the past few days I was eating a tad more than normal, I'd err on the side of less, but not ever refrain from eating or starve myself altogether.

I don't let it rule what I eat, I just consider calories as one more factor in the decision making process (also some others on the label, sugars/fats/sodium/bad ingredients/anything that says 113%). How I'm feeling is a major factor too, including how hungry or if I'm about to eat just out of boredom (never do this).

From government website:
4.184 kilojoules = 4,184 joules = 1 Calorie = 1 kilocalorie = 1,000 calories

So 1 cal = 4.184 kJ

I just keep record of what I ate during the day.

I eat usually 300 calories per meal.
Or if not, because one of my snacks are 180 calories, I just round it up to 200.

I'm pretty good at keeping tabs on my calories, but sometimes I love food too much. :( ... I was doing really good until a couple of hours ago...

Question about calories:

If I eat under 1000 calories per day and not exercise, will I lose weight?

Also, if you have Facebook, there's a very good application called "My Diet". You tell it what you've done and how long you did it for and it will say how many calories you burned, and you put in what you ate and how much of it you ate, and it tells you how many calories you've eaten. It's been very helpful for me.

God, I'm sick of seeing that term

One food calorie is actually a Calorie, or 1,000 calories

I do so out of habit. I've been trying really hard to stop, because I counted calories obsessively during my eating disordered days. It's still messing up my eating habits to view food in terms of quantity rather than quality. I know intellectually now there's really no need to deny myself nice foods if I can work it off in the longer term, but it really hasn't hit home emotionally yet.

Probably because it's as made up as all other advice.

Recovered anorexic here. It depends a lot on your own individual metabolism, but, by the time the whole "starvation mode" switches off and you do start to lose weight from eating so little, you'll probably already be very unwell indeed. You'll lose muscle and feel shitty, and possibly become malnourished. So it's not a good idea.

When I was keeping a written record, I was only taking in about 800 calories per day. I had problems with bulimia in the past and they were starting to creep back in.

No idea about counting calories, bu i think i over did it by eating 2 medium pizzas (1 with pepperoni, other with pinapple) in about 2 hours...

What if you eat 1000 Calories but never get hungry? Is it a problem then?
>> Anonymous
I used to count calories pretty carefully. I was limiting myself to 300 calories a day back then. I don't count them anymore though. I just try to eat healthfully. I usually make a few rough estimates though to make sure I don't eat more than 1500 calories a day, and then I just try to work it off.

that would most likely be a result of you slowing your metabolism to the speed of a glacier by constantly starving your body.

if you're one of those people that get hunger cravings once a week or so, then yes, it is a problem. you're okay to eat 1000 for a few days, but your body knows its not getting enough, it'll flip on a switch and make you go on a binge to eat more.

i know that feeling though. for most of my life (20 years) i've been eating very little because thats how I was raised, never knew that I was eating TOO little and really screwing my body over. I came to the realization that I was eating less than 1000 calories a day so I really fucked up my metabolism. But now I eat up to 1700-1800 w/ exercise (spread over 5 meals every 3 hours) and I feel so much better.

When i tried transitioning to eat more though, it was HARD because I was always full, not used to eating so much. A useful tip is to eat a lot of nuts- peanuts, pecans, walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds. High in calories, good fats and will help you reach your ideal calorie amount without eating a truckload.
