Lifting heavy ass weights is better than cardio. Let's talk about why, quickly.
Cardio is more accurately called aerobic exercise (it actually doesn't improve the strength of the heart that much). Cardio is steady work, therefore efficient work, which means the body can adapt to it easily. Being aerobic, the metabolism returns to normal shortly after finishing the activity. It takes some 45-60 minutes of cardio to effectively burn fat. Many people recommend HIIT, which is actually bringing cardios effects closer to Anaerobic activity.
Lifting weights is a natural HIIT process. Lifting = high intensity. Resting = low intensity/interval.
Weight lifting keeps your metabolism elevated longer, meaning you continue burning fat after you stop, for another 30 minutes. So doing 30 minutes of weights is like doing 60 minutes of cardio, in terms of caloric burn.
Further, activating the muscles releases chemicals into the bloodstream that stimulate the body to burn fat. Building muscle requires calories (which will be taken from stored fat on a low-cal diet) and each pound of muscle needs X calories to remain, so more of what you eat will be used to maintain your muscle, rather than be stored as fat.
A 220lb fatty eating 2800 calories a day will gain fat, a 220lb muscular guy will not gain fat, even if their food sources are identical and calorie totals are the same.
So fuck cardio, lift weights.
