PROTIP: Your tattoo artist knows more about how to properly heal your tattoo than you do, or than anyone on 4chan does. Listen to him.
On the off-chance that you're underage b& and you got tattooed by a retard in your stoner friend's kitchen: -Apply a water-based, unscented moisturizer (Curel makes a good one) several times a day. Vitamin E lotion is also acceptable. -Don't pick it when it flakes. -Don't apply anything oil-based (like Vaseline) or alcohol-based. -Clean it with a gentle, unscented, non-antibacterial soap (anything labeled for "sensitive skin" is good) 1-2 times a day. -Let it breathe in open air, but don't expose it to too much sun. If it is in a place where stiff clothes (like the waistband of your pants) will rub on it, cover it with a soft cover while you wear the clothes, and leave the clothes off as much as possible. -Don't use a sunblock until it stops flaking. For maximum color-retention over the span of its life, after it heals apply a mid-to-high-level sunscreen to the tattoo whenever it will be exposed to the sun for more than 1/2 hour at a time.
And one more time, FFS don't pick it. It will peel. It will flake. It may scab and when the skin comes loose and the colors look faded, you will be tempted to pick it off. Don't.
