Fingernails Anonymous
Hey /fit/,
I'm not sure what the terms are for each parts of the nail, but I hope I can still describe it.
In the diagram, my fingernails used to be like the one on the left. The white part would be somewhat substantial; regular stuff. Over the past few years, I've noticed they're slowly starting to become like the example on the right side of the diagram; the part stuck to my nail is creeping forward, forcing me to have to trim my nails more often if I don't want to scratch everyone. Also, the white part is starting to thinly creep down the sides...
I doubt it's too serious of a problem, but do any of you know what it is caused by, or could be a symptom of? Also, if you know how to correct it (even slowly over time), that would be nice.

copy pasta to the rescu3

In otherwise healthy people, this problem usually has no significance.

Even though you don't remember any injury, it may signify some damage to the nail bed some weeks previously. The result of a knock or blow can appear some weeks later as the nail grows.

It does not indicate a deficiency of something in the diet, like calcium, which is a common misconception. If the nails also have little tiny pits in them, the changes could be associated with the skin condition psoriasis, but usually there are other signs of the scaly psoriatic rash elsewhere on the body.

Fungal infections can affect the nails and cause discolouration, flaking and brittle nails. Taking clippings from the nails and sending them to the laboratory for examination can diagnosis this.

It is best to wait a few weeks and see if the process stops, after which the marks will just grow out. If this does not happen then show your GP so he or she can test for fungal infection, which if present can be treated with special drugs.

looks to me like you are cutting your finger nails too arched. It is similar to a toe nail (ingrown toe nails) cut them as strait as you can and eventually they will grow the first way you showed. If you keep tapering them the second one will occur.
