Hi /fit/

Will rowing machine kill my fat gut or are sit ups better? or what do you recommend? My arms and legs are quite muscular but I need to get rid of this big fat belly

You cannot lose fat in one specific area; it's an all-over thing (except via surgery). Running is a very good way to burn fat, and it doesn't require any sort of equipment other than some decent shoes (I like Chucks) and hopefully some scenery. Swimming is pretty cool for that, too.

Oh gawd rowing machines. It is rather true that I have never seen a rower with a gut.

However, I must warn you: chronic lower back problems are common with frequent rowers, because of they way they position themselves and apply force in their arms. My father was a professinal rower, and his lower back is absolutely terrible, to the point where he cannot even sit straight without back support.

That means they're doing it wrong. Rowing does take a lot of back work, but it also means you should stop once your back is fatigued. I guess as a professional rower he didn't have that luxury.

well as I', now a fat bastard, running will break my knees and ankles I reckon

similarly, being a fat bastard, I dont want to go swimming and get harpooned

how about if I switch between rowing machine and running?

Believe it or not, the entire industry is doing it wrong. The reality of the matter is, you can either adopt an aggressive stance that damages your back and wins races, or you can adopt a comfortable stance that does not damage your back and loses races.

We have a rowing machine here at home. I use one of those back braces fishermen use when I am on it, rather than straining my back over keeping my position straight.

Just breaking out into a run for absolutely no reason will break your knees and ankles. So will swimming: you'll be surprised how difficult swimming actually can be.

Why don't you start with one of them yoga or pilates thinghies? If your arms and legs are already muscular, clearly what you need to do is now fit them where they ought to be through stretching and warm-ups.

I feel like an elliptical machine (if you don't know what they are, I just heard my dad call it a cross trainer) would be pretty easy on your knees.

Swimming will not break his ankles and knees.

Yes it will, it'll displace all the water in the pool, making him land straight on the co...

okay, joke time over.

No, it won't literally break his ankles and knees, but he will have a very very difficult time moving anywhere in the water. My boyfriend is the same (beautiful arms legs and ass, then there is this MASSIVE GUT AND EPPIC MANBOOBAGE), and to this day, I wince at the memory of him trying to MOVE FORWARD in the SLOW LANE.

So how is this bad for him in any way?
