Lifting Gloves? Anonymous
I don't post here often, but I would like some advice, please.

(backstory: skip if you really don't care -- and I don't blame you for not)
I've been going to a gym for a couple of months now, and I'm making satisfactory progress (at least for me). But now, things are getting a bit heavy. My hands are becoming calloused, and often, especially with bench press, the bar leaves my hands aching for several minutes after each set.
(/backstory)

So ... should I invest in a good pair of lifting gloves? What kind?

I see most guys at the gym are using them, but some use the ones with wrist straps and some don't. Is it necessary, or should I just get a simple pair for the sake of padding and grip?

As you can tell, I'm still (at least) mostly clueless.

Dont use gloves, they're shit. When your hands get over callused, use the guide on beastskills.com on removing them, and you'll be sweet. I think the aching is just where your grip strength is being tested now.

i use gloves since i cant use chalk at my gym. i still have calluses which is cool (i know some people say you shouldnt get them if you grip correctly), but the gloves help with heavy weights for deads esp. plus they make you grip a wider area which helps your grip strength

that's funny because i only get caloused when playing in a kid's playground. you got to have proper GRIP technique, man.

(OP here)

Thanks for the advice so far. About proper grip, is there a recommended resource online for seeing what I'm doing wrong?

I go to a small gym without personal trainers (the ones with trainers are too expensive for my budget, unfortunately) so I really have no one to ask in person.

the aching sounds like it's your tendons not progressing as fast as your strength.

Actually, it's the palms of my hands, like I said, in bench press, from the weight. Would that be tendons, or just from the weight? I'm lifting ~70% my body weight at my current level.

i usually get alot of pain in my wrists when doing deadlifts and rows and stuff like that

your really stupid

You know WHY they form, to solidify the skin, more resistant, to ALLOW you to accomplish your tasks. They form better grip with more development. They feel rough but they're great for WL.

Mind you, gloves allow you to grip better (obviously) but theres nothing wrong with cailsis.

BTW: the formation of cailisis DOES NOT mean your gripping improperly, dumbass.

i didnt realize it was your hands. it's probably just needing to get acclimated to the heavy weight. make sure your grip so that the bar is as close to your wrist as possible, and you dont want your hands bending back towards you, they should be straight up.

also calluses shouldnt be stressed over, they just suck if you rip them, but even though you should man up and lift through the pain.

Thanks again for the advice. I appreciate it. I'll pay better attention to my grip and such.

Aching has nothing to do with lifting gloves. Keep lifting and it'll go away.

If you feels your palms "burn", keep lifting for a while and it'll go away by itself.

The tradeoff is leather hands. (man hands) which is quite useful

gloves are a crutch, using them will hinder your grip strength

I think you mean straps. Gloves would, if anything make it harder to hold onto the bar, by increasing the diameter of it.

I've injured my wrist. When it heals I'm going to use gloves with straps. Is this a good idea? I've been unable to lift for months due injuring the join/tendons in my wrist.

I use wrist-wrap gloves. Helps support wrists.

I get what he's saying about calluses and all, I just can't figure out why it would prevent someone from having a proper grip on the bar unless they happen to be wearing mittens or something.

As an aside, I don't wear gloves, I just don't see them to be that big of a problem; I could be wrong.

i hurt my wrist doing chins (it was retardation on my part) because I was coming down too fast trying to get as many reps in as i could. anyway, it still bothers me 2 years later so i got wrist wrap gloves and they help a lot.

no gloves for me. real man hands are the ones that squeeze the titties folks.
