MELBOURNE: Scientists have discovered that going veggie could be bad for your brain-with those on a meat-free diet six times more likely to suffer brain shrinkage.

Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system. Yeast extracts are one of the few vegetarian foods which provide good levels of the vitamin.

The link was discovered by Oxford University scientists who used memory tests, physical checks and brain scans to examine 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87.

When the volunteers were retested five years later the medics found those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were also the most likely to have brain shrinkage. It confirms earlier research showing a link between brain atrophy and low levels of B12.

Brain scans of more than 1,800 people found that people who downed 14 drinks or more a week had 1.6% more brain shrinkage than teetotallers. Women in their seventies were the most at risk.

Beer does less damage than wine according to a study in Alcohol and Alcoholism.

Since most vegetarians know nothing about nutrition (except DURRR MEAT IS BAD I CAN LIVE OFF OF SALADS!) this doesn't surprise me.

Sage for troll thread.

>Beer does less damage than wine according to a study in Alcohol and Alcoholism.

>Researchers found that the hippocampus-the part of the brain that stores memories - was 10% smaller in beer drinkers than those who stuck to wine.
I still don't get this.

it's written confusingly and seems to be missing a % somewhere but I think what it means is that in those who drink x amount a week their brain was found to be 1.6% smaller than those who did not drink at all. However, in those that do drink those who drank beer had less shrinkage OVERALL compared to those who drank wine. HOWEVER, Those that drank beer instead of wine showed 10% more shrinkage in the hippocampus, a specific location of the brain, even though overall they showed less damage.

let's compare your thread title with the message of the article:
"Eating veggies shrinks the brain"

"Vegans and vegetarians are the most likely to be deficient because the best sources of the vitamin are meat, particularly liver, milk and fish. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause anaemia and inflammation of the nervous system"

Do I really need to point out whats wrong here?

Okay, Vegan here. Why do you have to post this bullshit! It is wrong, meat isn't the only source of vitamin B-12. How is that study credible, did they studied the individuals through their life-span? NO! so how the hell do they know what kind of nutrition these people have employed since their youth. They could of ben under educated as far we know about vitamins and the wide variety of produce that gives you specific nutrients.Hell their diet could of consist of mostly rice. Their choice to being vegetarian could of lacked research and they could be malnourished. This study doesn't represent a population it is too small! SO FUCK YOU OP. you have a problem then message me because this is BS. SN: awesomevegan

I read this and felt an overwhelming feeling depression and sympathy for those put effort into these studies.

Why can't we just demolish scientific journalism and instead just be given the actual fucking write up on the study of what happened.

Even for those that don't get it (think outside your colleges where stupid people live and buy into every bit of everything they read), having these studies more readily available would stop bullshit like the OPs article from misleading people.

And it's not even as though the OP is stupid, though he should scrutinize better, It's just that what the general public relies on for scientific inquiry is untrustworthy because they lack the ability to understand what happened and what it means and they aren't willing to lose readers.

I'm so sad right now.

Not eating meat still makes you a fucking idiot.

The studies are available if people want to look them up. At least the abstracts are, but 1) your average person doesn't know how to interpret them 2) it's not as profitable or exciting because the truth is rarely straightforward and black/white

Anyway, even the studies themselves aren't always that reliable unless peer-reviewed.
