Hello /fit/

I have recently started Aikido, and was wondering what body type would be best for it, thin or muscular?
>> Anonymous
Thin, you don't need muscles for Aikido. Actually, you shouldn't even waste your time with that crap and just quit it now. Its going to get you killed

Thin.

Aikido has nothing to do with body type. More body weight, and the way you use it.

Best aikido person I've personally known had the physique of a bear. He was just a huge center of gravity and he was excellent. Body type doesn't matter as much as being in shape for your body type does. If you're a clutz, you will probably never be good at aikido.

>Its going to get you killed
Lulz. Aikido is as likely to get you killed as fucking Yoga. It's a strictly peaceful MA that preaches pain as being more effective than injury. It's as pacifistic as MA gets.
I did Aikido, it's awesome if you want to improve your agility. It's OK for endurance, and worthless for strength straining.
My general coordination improved a thousand fold after a year of Aikido. Shit's awesome.
Also, short and small wins for Aikido. Body type has nothing to do with it, just general size.
>> Anonymous
>>195614
You're not ACTUALLY throwing them. It's more like making them fall by throwing them off-balance. Aikido is ALL about balance.
I mean I'm 5'2 and kind of overweight but in Aikido I could pick up a guy 150 pounds bigger than me by balance alone. Course, it was with a technique that's completely worthless in a fight, but it's still fun to do for the hell of it.

Aikido is about finding the best way OUT of a fight. Aikido doesn't fail, but it appeals to a completely different type of person.
And it teaches you to control your opponent. In a fight, if you don't have control of your opponent, you're lucky if you don't get your ass kicked.
Aikido has a different philosophy than most MA and therefore people laugh at it, but unless you've actually done it for a few months you don't know shit about it. And preferably from a sensei who isn't a retard. I went to a dojo where it was literally the first dojo in America to have Aikido. They've been teaching it for 30 years, they knew what the fuck they were doing.
I can't speak for all the usual strip-mall rent-a-sensei garbage dojos out there.

False, it was a second dan who integrated the animal styles of chinese wushu into his hybrid "art." The early UFC fights had some pretty wild exaggerations for their competitors. They claimed a sumo was a "former Yokozuna" when in reality he was at best an intermediate student.

>>196887

As already mentioned, Boxing is a martial art, but your point is irrelevant simply because it has a completely different learning curve than some martial arts, such as Aikido. I guarantee you if I got a boxer with 5 years training to go against a krav maga practicioner with 5 years training, the boxer wouldn't have a chance.

>>196094
Aikido's actually pretty good at teaching you how to deal with more than one attacker in its higher levels. BJJ unfortunately relies on the intimidation factor, ie the rest of the gang will be too scared to come to their buddy's rescue if you're on the ground pounding the shit out of him. Aikido actually tries to train you to keep everyone in front of you and throw them into each other to keep distance.

>>196059
At the level the poster you're talking to is probably at, the guy was seriously aiming for his head, chest, whatever. In Ki Aikido, which is by far the most pacifist, after the first test the attacker is more aggressive. So basically by the third or fourth test they're seriously aiming to hurt you.

Quick question:

If Aikido is so "useless" why is it that the Tokyo Riot police are forced to undergo an exceptionally rigorous one year program in which they learn Yoshinkan Aikido?

Because instead of learning something worthwhile like Krav Maga/Sambo/CQC/End a fight quickly using techniques from multiple schools, which is the same basics taught to almost all law enforcement, military, and special forces. . . they're going with the shit that's japanese.

The reason Mixed Martial Arts beats Aikido is not because is because it's like taking Aikido and adding boxing and Judo and tiger crane style ass smashing and using what works best from all them.
>> Anonymous
>>197236

Congrats on your racism. Yoshinkan isn't the only thing they're taught.

Also, the reason Mixed Martial Arts "beats" Aikido is because the rules of organizations like UFC are incredibly inhibiting for most Asian Martial Arts. The fact that it's a sport and they're not trying to kill each other/break limbs gets rid of literally every throw taught in Aikido, and the banning of dropping elbows prevents them from efficiently negating the initial shoot.

One last bit, BJJ is actually the inbred cousin of Judo. Sad, isn't it?

protip: UFC is a sport.

Aikido works better against the kind of gutter-fighting sneak attacks you're likely to encounter then "ground and pound". *That* shit will get you killed out side of a ring, not Aikido.

>Japanese police have probably been practicing Aikido for centuries now.

Uh, no. Aikido and it's immediate fore-runner cropped up in the late 19th, early 20th century. It's association with the NPA is largely a 1930s development.

It is still taught along with judo (this is intentional btw; Jigoro Kano and Ueshiba Morihei were contemporaries; Ueshiba outsourced the Jujitsu stuff to Kano to focus on the 113 Aiki techniques.) , and you need a Shodan in Aikido to make Sergent. You also need a Shodan to qualify for the riot squad.

peaceful is a relative term; it's not as combat orientated as Daito-ryu but it's down right easy to snap joints, cause dislocations or break bones if you're of a mind to. Cops just generally aren't because the prosecutors get pissy if you beat the shit out of the suspects.

Pro tip: Aikido loses out to combat specific martial arts like Krav Maga and Sambo. Elements of Aikido have been incorporated into them, as well as greco-roman wrestling, etc, etc. Martial arts created specifically to end conflicts.

If you're out to learn something for down and gritty street fights, learn those. Aikido is still more about self-betterment and so forth then it is about fighting.

Also, gun > martial arts. I've yet to hear about someone people able to dodge an assault rifle pointed at them.

You can't carry one 24/7 365. FYI; Gun-free zones were just declared constitutional; which means you and the gun will part ways at some point. Also, in case you haven't figured it out yet you can't solve all your problems with lead. Shooting a drunk in a bar is murder.

Aikido was developed as a newer martial art...And its about using the opposing force of the attacker, or the 'ki' of the attacker, against themself. Honestly, I've seen an Aikido master take down 12 people at once just by shifting his foot back.

Dunno about you, but Aikido was developed for self development, and harmonious leisure of understanding oneself. The fact many on here keep trolling proves you really don't have much of a sense for what Martial Arts was developed for.

Since it was created for defense against stronger opponents, there are varieties that apply to different situations. And maybe Aikido is weak against ground submission and heavy hitters/Muay Thai boxing types?...So? Apart of Martial Arts is adaptation, and if a person can't adapt their martial arts to another style that they are weak against, then no one is truly a 'Master' of that style.

Um, here is Webster's definition of Martial Art

Any of several Oriental arts of weaponless self-defense; usually practiced as a sport; "he had a black belt in the martial arts".

Continuing on, Aikido has no strengths and many, many better alternatives. Clearly it was shown to be weak when tested. And all that shit about discipline and self development can be found in any sport, physical activity, training, etc.

So what is aikido good for? Nothing at all.

Did you ever notice the greatest thing about Seagal movie titles is that they tell a story in order of their release? No? Well dig below.

Steven Seagal was ABOVE THE LAW, but he was too HARD TO KILL, so now he’s been MARKED FOR DEATH, by Haitians who are OUT FOR JUSTICE. Can he live while UNDER SIEGE? Could you survive while UNDER SIEGE 2? It was time to make an EXECUTIVE DECISION about THE GLIMMER MAN. There’s a FIRE DOWN BELOW and only Seagal, THE PATRIOT can heal the EXIT WOUNDS left in his TICKER. Despite being HALF PAST DEAD, THE FOREINGER who was OUT TO KILL Seagal emerged from THE BELLY OF THE BEAST. His name was CLEMENTINE. Safety was OUT OF REACH for Seagal, but still he walked INTO THE SUN until he was SUBMERGED into the Pacific Ocean by a threat unknown. TODAY YOU DIE yelled Clementine as THE BLACK DAWN rose. But Steven is a MERCENARY FOR JUSTICE, a SHADOW MAN, an ATTACK FORCE all his own! His FLIGHT OF FURY would unleash some cold hard URBAN JUSTICE as he PISTOL WHIPPED the man whose true motivation was to stop filming of THE UNTITLED ONION MOVIE. At this KILLING POINT Seagal prevailed, proving that he is still -- THE PRINCE OF PISTOLS!

You're confusing modern vale tudo/MMA competition with the ones 10-20 years ago. Back then, there were NO RULES WHATSOEVER. It was literally anything goes. Aikido got its ass handed to it then, and it'll still get its ass handed to it now. And Aikido has always used it's 'philosophy' to disguise the fact that its not combat effective. By refusing to fight people it still can maintain the image that its a devastating fighting style, which its not.
>> Anonymous
>>198207
A - The fights were still sports/competition oriented. As with now, if an Aikidoka/anyone really were to purposely break a limb/murder someone, which comprises most of Aikido's techniques, not only would they be a soulless psycho, but they'd most likely be arrested/killed in retaliation.
B - Considering guys like Gozo Shioda would purposely pick fights with thugs and gang members to test his art, and he CONTINUED to train in/espouse Aikido, I'd say you're "they refuse to make it look deadly" argument is null
C - Because of the steep learning curve of the art, it's right up there with Tai Chi as an art a novice/journeyman really REALLY can't use effectively.
>> Anonymous
>>198211

>A - The fights were still sports/competition oriented.

Combatants died frequently in those fights

>B - Considering guys like Gozo Shioda

Ancient legends from the deep mystical past do not prove your point very well, even if it was 50 years ago. The difference between that and vale tudo is that vale tudo has fights on tape to prove what happened, and aikido and other martial arts (typically asian) rely on embelleshed hand-me-down stories that masters tell their students to impress them.

C - Because of the steep learning curve of the art

Steep learning curve = impractical and time inefficient. Take two fighters, one aikidoka and one krav maga fighter. In one year, the aikidoka doesn't know shit, and the krav maga trained fighter is ready to kill on the battlefield. 5 years down the road, the aikidoka is becoming very proficient, while the KM fighter is at legendary status already. 10 year later, the aikidoka is finally considered a master, while the KM master has been a master for years, knows what works and whats bullshit, has opened his own school, and has already trained a few generations of proficient fighters.
>> Anonymous
>>198223
A - Again, I highly doubt that any truly adept Aikidoka fought in any of those to begin with.
B - Shioda wrote his memoirs in the early 90s. Unless you really are retarded enough to think he'd make up shit about his time in the military, then you're just hopeless.
C - Your point being? Aikido's apparently effective enough that the Tokyo police force officially adapted it in the 50s.

My $0.02 on Aikido...

One of my friends is 26, about 5'6" and about 140-150lbs. He'd been an avid staker for years in addition to being an above-average computer geek. Since starting Aikido about 2 years ago he's gone from about 16% BF to about 7% BF while staying around the same weight... and... because he's naturally balanced and coordinated (natural skater, etc...) he's deadly dangerous with Aikido and has REALLY excelled with it.

I would never f* with him in any kind of serious way and I'm about 6'3" 250. I also would never be able to do half the things he's learned quickly in Aikido because I am naturally slow and clumsy.

Aikido suits itself extremely well to a particular body type - his.... and likewise that of the average Japanese man! Duh!

Definition of Martial Arts again:

Any of several Oriental arts of weaponless self-defense; usually practiced as a sport; "he had a black belt in the martial arts".

So yes, MA is related to sports. And aikido, along with most useless MAs, simply failed in vale tudo. And yeah, there were plenty of Japanese competitors in it - the ones that used jiu jitsu and judo were more successful. Aikido, most kung fu, etc were weak and useless.

As for Japan's police... They'd be 100x more effective if they ditched aikido and took other shit.

so when are we getting a /ma/ board?

OP:

You don't need muscles for aikido, they will only slow you down. It's impossible to be explosive and strong, I asked my sensei about this one time. IMO You shouldn't workout at all, aikido alone will give you the proper strength and cardio needed.

You must be warned, though, that by learning this deadly art you yourself are becoming a real human weapon. There is no way to deflect chi, and when worse comes to worse, your wrist locks can bring down your opponent.

Screw those judo, bjj and wrestling fags. We can throw them on the ground so hard our chi will make them black out, so don't worry about a ground game.

If you learn Atemi (strikes, kicks, etc), then it should be at least an ok school.

Pro Tip: People in Aikido yield to the grappling, because if you don't, it's *snap crackle pop" time. Aikido is actually pretty rough if done right, rougher than boxing and wrestling, en par with the meaner moves in Catch as Catch Can or Bare Knuckle Boxing (which btw were real Combat Arts, not the watered down modern stuff where you can only PRAY that the opponent doesn't have stopping power).

Also, I laugh at all the MMA nutriders. Gb2 rolling on the floor with other burly man you faggots. The last MMA guy I insulted didn't even show up for the challenge (and I even cut my hair for that match - shitsucks).

Myself, I'm doing Taijiquan. I came for the health benefits after years of Full COntact Karate and stayed for the effortlessness of beating up and throwing around bullies. Which actually IS a lot of fun.

Anyway - Aikido works. If yours doesn't work, look for another school. Easy as that.

Of course, Boxing, Wrestling, MMA etc. are much easier to learn, so if you only have a few months for THE GREAT FIGHT... you should go for boxing and wrestling. If you have the option for old school European stuff, rather do that than the modern stuff. Catch as Catch Can, for example, is really fun, though you probably will get hurt if you're a beginner and overdo it. Hurt A LOT.

Oh, and RE: Chi, Ki, Prana, Pneuma (etc):
It comes in time. By itself. Just do the exercises and don't think about it. It's basically like training yopur muscles - you do the bench press, you get stronger. Same with Chi - you do the exercises, you get stronger. No need for big theories and stuff.

It's also not really supernatural or magic or stuff. Get that shit outta your head ASAP, it will just confuse you. As soon as you have an electric feeling running through your fingers, warmth, pleasant numbness, the whole shit, you know you're on the right way. Relaxation is the key - if you think you're loose and relaxed, you're still not relaxed enough.

USUALLY practiced as sport. USUALLY. Again, aikido is not an art that lends itself well to a controlled, competitive environment, and the people who tend to try and use it in such are usually amateurs or simply arrogant idiots who haven't taken it nearly long enough to use it effectively.
