If you're set on a mountain bike, don't bother with tons of suspension, unless you'll actually be doing a lot of real mountain biking.
If you're set on a road bike, don't bother with carbon frames, unless you're planning on racing.
I don't know anything about mountain bike components, so I'll let someone else comment on that. But for the road/city, Shimano 105 is your best bet for awesome price/quality ratio in road bike components.
