Buffet halp Anonymous
Hey /fit/. I have a problem: I hate wasting food. I've always been raised to not throw out food unless it is completely unsalvagable. For the past nine months or so, I've been living in a dorm and our dining hall is an all-you-can-eat-buffet sort of thing. Every time I go to eat, I feel this need to stuff my face with anything and everything they're serving that day. I eat easily 3 or 4 times larger meals than I do at home because I know at the end of the day, all the food that isn't eaten gets thrown out. I work in the dining hall in the evenings and I feel horrible throwing out so much food, so I usually try to stuff my face with a bit of food after we close before I have to toss it. I do this same sort of thing every time I go to non-college-dining-hall-buffets as well. The last time I went to Golden Corral I think I made myself sick trying to eat to much so as to "get my money's worth" of food.

I'm not really a fat girl or anything, but this sort of eating makes me feel truly unhealthy. I'm female and 5'5" and at the beginning of my freshman year I was 112 lbs. I'm now 120. I know 8 lbs isn't all that much weight to whine about and I know I'm still technically at a healthy weight, but I really don't feel it. I feel sick to my stomach hours after eating my meals now. I know I'm eating way to much, but I really can't stop. I hate the idea of wasting my money on small meals or our dining hall having to throw such huge amounts of food out at the end of the day. Please halp /fit/.

are you, by chance, of jewish descent?

You should start making your own food instead of eating out all the time. At least then you can't complain about wasting food or money.

Also, are you eating off of other people's plates? Gross. >.<

Not really. A very very small part of me is. Like 1/16 I think. My parents were of Swedish and German descent mostly. My heritage is confusing.

The meal plan is required if you live in the dorms and living in the dorms is required freshman year. I'm also going to be living in the dorms next year, so I can expect to be eating all my meals in this dining hall for at least another 13 months.

And no, I don't eat off people's plates. The food is kept in those big pans you know? And after we close we have to take all the pans and through everything out. The waste is ginormous. I usually take a few things from each pan before I through out it's contents and take it to the dish room.

think of it this way: every bit of food you eat after you feel full will make you fatter and fatter, and if you keep this up just to save money (lol jew) i can guarantee that you will spend even more on all sorts of fat loss shit later on when you're a disgusting tub of lard.

I've always had pretty great metabolism, so I'm betting that by the time my metabolism finally slows, I'll be out of the college dorms and eating healthfully by then. What I want to know are ways to stop myself from being so disgusted by wasted food.

... I try ;_;

sage for thin girl being pointlessly overly paranoid/whiny.

It is not a matter of my weight. I know I have good metabolism and I know it's possible for me to eat this way without getting to be overweight. It is a matter of me huge portions to the point of feeling ill the rest of the day which is a health concern of mine, not at all weight-related. I want to feel healthy and energetic every day, but every time I go in to eat, I eat too much.

Print this picture, carry it with you at all times. When you feel like stuffing your face, stare at it for a few minutes.

Also, don't worry OP, i'm sure she ate the bratwurst after she was done with it.

That is quite terrifying... And I really can't look away. I wasn't planning to gross myself into not eating, but I suppose that can be my backup plan if no one posts any serious advice haha.

Dammit, it got deleted. I want to see that picture.

Anyways OP, just grab small portions, and clean those off of your plate.

Think of it this way. For every bit of food you throw out, you'll feed another family of rats at the landfill.

Girl, I've got the same problem with being strictly raised to not leave before I finish all my food and I came from a 'no leftover' house, so everything made had to be eaten that night.
It's hard, but you have to accept that shit gets thrown out. Take smaller portions from the buffet when you go out to eat and just eat the smaller portions. And eat slowly too, that'll fill you up faster.
And for when you work at the dining hall and feel bad about throwing out the food so you scarf it down: mint. Mints you suck on, peppermint gum, just make your mouth all minty so that you don't want to put other flavors in there.

Thanks! Mints seem very doable since we have a big bowl of them sitting on the table as you come in. I'll try to eat more of those and less of the leftovers. And yeah... smaller portion sizes too. I'll use their tiny plates.

Plate size will definetly help, but don't fill it up either. You should always have a inch of clear along the circumfrence of the plate, without the food being piled in the middle.
