If I just skipped the cardio phase and didn't reduce my calorie intake, would weight lifting make me gain weight or just convert my existing mass into muscle over time?

Im 240 lbs and usually too lazy to do cardio.

However I do walk two miles a day and have an on my feet production job.

if you are currently not gaining weight and if you kept your diet the same you should lose some weight if you start lifting.

At some point I became aware that locking my knees when I walk meant my skeletal structure was supporting me, so I actively avoid doing that to let my leg muscles support my weight.

Its not much but since I have to walk anyways I do it.

I was 270 lbs at the beginning of the year but my weight seems to have stabilized at 240 lbs with my current activity. It fluctuates between 238 and 242 for about 3 months now.

So lifting it is I guess. Quick question though:

Whats the best way to find my max press? I hear 70% of my max press is for muscle gain.

Lets say I try too little or too much weight when trying to find out. Should I wait to try again so my muscles get rest, or does that not matter at all?

oh, and I did notice that for a while I was not loosing weight but my waistline was shrinking. Kept having to use different notches on my belt.

If you're trying to loose weight your "max press" should not be an issue. what you will need to do is lift until you can't do it any more (I recommend that you spend your first two weeks just getting used to lifting weights....try not to make yourself so sore you can't move at all for the next two days)

"I'm not gaining weight" means
energy in = energy out
Let's call this
I[1] = O[1]

"Building muscle" means
O[2]>O[1]

"Eating the same amount" means
I[2] = I[1]

So if you eat the same and build muscle, you've got:
I[1] = O[1] < O[2]
I[2] = O[1]
I[2] < O[2]

Which can be converted back into "losing weight"

Muscle weighs more than fat, yeah. But meaningful weightlifting is actually decent cardio, better than walking probably. But still, for relatively fast weight loss (8-14 pounds a month) you need both a reasonable diet and cardio.

Last thing, muscle doesn't weigh more than fat, it is more dense though

Not sure how to answer with no weight in question.

As for max press, Im not really sure what my arms are at but I know I can do every weight on the leg machine.
