Give it to me straight, /fit/

I'm looking to cut some fat. As an endurance runner (a somewhat chubby one), I can run 10 miles easy every day if I wanted. As I understand it, a mile of running (at the speeds I do) roughly burns 100 calories, so 10 miles a day would kill 1000 calories per day. Now, I've read the cardio myth article and all that, but I'm still curious about how I would lose some 10 lb more effectively, given I restrict my diet.

a) 10 miles of running a day
b) HIIT until failure (~1.5 miles) and then a little more beyond the soreness

B. Running 10 miles everyday is quite unnecessary and is a big hazard to your heart. you need to calculate your target heart rate to lose fat, subtract your age from 220, and that's the heart rate you should be hitting to lose fat. (ie: 220-20 = 200, you should be hitting 200 everytime you do cardio to burn fat efficiently).

Great job genius. If you've been running 10 miles a day, are good at it, and you're still chubby, logic dictates that you are doing something wrong when it comes to burning fat. Conduct an experiment. Run 10 miles everyday for a week on the restricted diet, record your results, and then the next week try HIIT sprinting on the restricted diet.

As I said, diet-restricted. I used to run 10 miles daily before to train for a marathon, with a diet restricted. I lost 20 lb in 3 weeks, 10 of which was from water weight alone, I'm assuming. Restricted diet = 1000 cal a day, primarily from protein. inb4 unhealthy, gonna kill myself, etc etc, whatever I'm still alive and had zero close calls.

I'm doing HIIT more recently with a restricted diet too, and 3 weeks has only killed some 6 lb off of me, which is alright but it doesn't compare. Same diet.

Thing is, when I did 10 miles a day, a lot of the lost weight was probably also from muscle as much as it was from fat. So even having experimented on my own, I'm not sure which is better for me. I want to maintain the muscle I've gained throughout my body, so that's why I'm unsure which would be the better method.

So tell me, /fit/, which is the better way, assuming I still lift on the side and intake appropriate amounts of protein.

wtf, seriously?

Let's say your body needs ~2500kcals a day, plus 1000kcal from running. You eat 1000kcal worth of stuff, so you burn that from running alone. The maximum amount of calories that can be extracted from body fat alone is for a normal 180lbs/bf20% guy somewhere around 1100 calories a day. That means your body has to get the remaining ~1400 calories it needs to maintain itself from muscles. So if you want to cut fat, that's some shitty eating habits you got there.
