How do I treat a sprained ankle? My ankle was healing on it's own, but I re-injured it after a night of drinking (I don't remember how) and now it hurts worse. Help?

Pic not related, but funny.

Rest, ice, compression, elevation; although unless it's swollen, you don't have to really elevate it.

If you decide to ice it, a bag of frozen peas works way better than ice. The most important thing is the rest; your body will take care of it on it's own, you just need to give it time.

dont strain it by overusing it. just rest, and go see a doctor.

There's no reason to see a doctor for a sprained ankle.
If you think it may be broken, then it's best to get an X-ray, because it will require a cast... But if it's not terribly painful and you have pretty good mobility, then it most likely isn't.

OP here.

How about one of those ankle wraps? Would they help at all if I'm resting?

Ankle wraps will reduce the swelling.

Be careful not to wrap it too tightly though, as it'll prevent blood circulation.

but>>154427had it right. rest, ice, compression (your ankle wrap) and elevation.

A little bit. Any time you can immobilize the joint more you're going to be taking stress off of it. If you have the ten bucks or whatever to spend, go head; but wearing an ankle brace doesn't mean you can go back to doing whatever you did that injured it in the first place.

Op here.

Thanks a million. Hope to get back to running soon.
