Yes, and it is utterly ridiculous.
But to answer the OP's question, you're almost certainly using your neck (more likely using your arms to pull your head up and compress your abs). I don't know of any way to train yourself out of this behavior other than simply not doing it. Not putting your arms behind your ears might help, as that naturally makes people want to use their head in the motion. But the only motion should be in your abs!
