/fit/, I don't usually come here because I don't need to lose any weight.

Buuuut, I was playing DDR in workout mode, figured I'd try it out and see how it works, and it says after about 5 or 6 songs on the hardest difficulty I had burned 150.034kcals.

I looked it up on wikipedia, and it says a kcal is equal to 1000 calories. Huh? I had burned 150 thousand calories? Surely that's not right!

So what's going on here, how do I know the exact amount I burned? pic unrelated.

When most people say Calories, they mean kcals. Food packaging usually lists it in Kcals and so does exercise equipment predicting how much you've burnt.

Someone didn't pay close attention in chemistry. kcal are kilocalories which are also known as Calories, not to be mistaken for calories. You're thinking kiloJOULES which is energy.

PROTIP: "calorie" is a chemistry term, specifically the amount of energy required to raise 1ml of H20 1 degree C. A kilocalorie (or Calorie with a big C) is the amount of energy required to raise 1L of water 1 degree C. Big C Calories are what we see on food packages.

Calories and calories are both measurements of energy. The capital C denotes a kilocalorie.

Burning less energy but burning more fat doesn't even make any sense. Burning fat IS burning energy.

And HIIT uses mainly carbs as fuel, not fat. You got it the other way around. The more intense an exercise the less fat is used for your bodys fuel.

Whether you're burning carbs or fat depends on how much carbohydrate energy you have stored in your liver. If you've been loading up on carbs in the previous few hours, you'll be burning carbs. Once your liver is out of carbs, your bodies resorts to burning fat reserves.

The kind of energy burned has nothing to do with the exercise, it's entirely dependent on what kind of energy is available. The body burns carbs first (if available), then fats.

You are dead wrong. An anaerobic exercise and an aerobic exercise are going to draw fuel from your body in different ways. Running a 100 meter sprint and running a marathon are going to use different kinds of fuel. You're always burning fat AND carbs for any kind of activity past short bursts of activity like shot-putting. But the ratio of fats used to carbs used will change drastically based on what exercise you are doing. This is because the chemical reaction that takes place in your body to burn fat for energy requires glucose to even work.
