Sup /fit/?How far down should one go when doing them SQUATZ? Is there any reason to not go pretty much ass-to-ankle?
Well, one reason is lower back rounding. A lot of people don't have the proper flexibility to be able to go ass-to-ankle without putting their lower back at risk. Otherwise, it's definitely advisable. Everybody should at least go a bit past parallel. Going only parallel is the worst for the knees.

I just set the safety bars at depth and go down till I touch them; takes the guess work out of it.

just focus on keeping the weight on your heels, and only use your heels to push off/stabilize. ass-to-grass squats are hard as hell, if you can do them, great, but if you can only go down as far as the OP pic, that's fine, too
Go down all the way. The real myth about squats is that it's easier on your knees to do them from parallel. The fact is that it's probably harder on them. When you drop all the way down your ass and your hamstrings pull you out of the squat. But when you don't, instead of pulling through after that initial momentum, your knees have to do everything.If you don't work your glutes/hamstrings, you're really losing out on half of the benefits of the exercise.

I mean, why would it be better than anything else?I've done a lot of sports that worked-out my legs (track'n field 100m to 400m and Ice hockey). I can push over 320lbs on a leg press machine. Why would I want to do squatz?
