sup /fit/

I sometimes don't know what to say (health problem?)

when someone says "hey, what's up" what do you say back?

Today I was walking down the hall in residence and this cute girl I've never seen before says "hey, what's up" (she was standing waiting for the bathroom). Being the awkward guy I am I respond with "hey" quietly and continue walking.

What should I have said /fit/?

PS. I'm an upper year living on campus (not a don or anything) and I feel it's awkward to talk to the first years and I generally avoid them, is this normal?

how about thinking up responses before hand

Nope, you're a shambling social failure.

Your only solution is to ingest as much ecstasy as you possibly can and go for a walk.

You should rehearse what you say just like Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice. Then you could be uber pimp like him.
>> Anonymous
You should have slowed as you said, "Not much, how are you?"

If she took a moment to respond you should have stopped and engaged in trivial conversation.

>>310757
I've heard that before, but I think that's too much for someone you don't know. Also I'd assume that most people would think that's moar akward...
>> Anonymous
"Hi there... wait, haven't I seen you before ? Maybe in class ?"

CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION FOR CHRIST SAKE

>>310738

The moment you respond like this, you pretty much cut yourself off from her and all of her friends and word will spread fast that you're "rude and ignorant".

Granted, you WERE very off putting, but I guarantee the first thing she did (since girls can't wait to whine to their friends about the most mundane shit) was find her nearest acquaintance/friend and start going off about how the guy wearing X and was X feet tall and had glasses (or not) snubbed his nose at me and gave me attitude when all I did was try to be nice to him bawwwwww!

Before you know it, nobody is going to bother trying to talk to you because you now have the reputation of a douchebag. That's why people like you never make friends or fit in on a large social scale, it isn't because you're fat, ugly, stupid or unappealing; it's because your shyness gives the first impression that you're an elitist, arrogant butthole.

Hope you get what I'm saying. I don't see what's so difficult about putting on a smile and saying "Hi!" right back to someone. It's not like they're inviting you to sit there and make you listen to their life's story or rant about politics. They're just being normal, friendly people.

OP here
>It's not like they're inviting you to sit there and make you listen to their life's story or rant about politics. They're just being normal, friendly people.

I'm usually under the impression that people just say hi/hey/what's up just to be nice, they don't really care what I respond with. Am I mistaken then?

I don't see what was wrong with replying with "hey", apart from doing it quietly. If you say it in a nice enough voice, with a genuine smile and maybe a slight upward nod of the head then "hey" is fine. When people ask "what's up" it's just a generic greeting - me and my friends used to always just say "alright?" as a greeting and there was no need to respond "im good thanks". Even try just saying whats up back to her.

Is that all I have to say then. Hmm..

When I walk through the girls' side of the dorms, I just yell "WHATSUP SLUTS". And they all love me for it.
>> Anonymous
You say "hey *smile* not much, what's up with you?" and go from there

Start a conversation, after a little chat ask her out for coffee, cute girls don't say what's up for no reason.

>>310851

They could just be trying to be polite can't they?
>> Anonymous
>>310838
If you want to talk with the person, begin making conversation. If you dont, then just reply "'sup"
>> Anonymous
>>310870
No, polite is a quick nod or a tight lipped 'hi'

A smile and a 'what's up' means they want hawt secks. Even if you have to take the pussy by force.

hmm.. this week is orientation, people are generally moar outgoing during this time.

Especially the residence staff (students who become dons/community advisors) who are trying to make the transition to residence easier for first year students.

I don't want to hit on one of them...
>> Anonymous
Just say "hey hows it going"
they will reply with something along the lines of
"i'm pretty good you?"
then you say
"yeah im fine"

then you say something such as

"hey did you see/ hey have you heard/ hey thats a nice/ what are you up to tonight (in a non asking out kinda way)

works everytime.

You're overthinking, just try, start a conversation, little small talk, and ask her out. Worst she can say is no, at which point you can experience self esteem crushing rejection and spend your time avoiding her in the hall and not making eye contact with another girl until you're 30.

OP here. Thanks for the replies.

As mentioned above, I'm in my 4th year at university and I don't know if it's normal to talk with the first years too much.

Some of you suggested asking the girl out that said "hey" to me.
Will she think that it's weird for a 4th year to ask out a freshman? Or should I just try to have a normal conversation without me asking her out?

Best advice so far OP. Follow this.

Lol at all the dumbasses in this thread. Just because a girl (or guy) says hi to you does not in any way mean they are even remotely interested in dating, LET ALONE fucking you. Christ, you people have no real social experience. You're like the kids on TF2 who start e-flirting the moment they find out that "ZOMGZ GUISE GIRL ON TEH SERVER xD"

>>310795

You can say almost anything you want if you use a nice sounding inflection and smile. Like the old saying goes, "It isn't what you say, it's how you say it." A simple "Hey." can come off as rudely sarcastic or incredibly bubbly and sweet depending on tone of voice and body language.

I mean, yeah, if you mutter "Hi" under your breath while looking halfway at the ground and rolling your eyes, any normal person is going to perceive that as disgustingly rude sarcasm and never speak to you again. It doesn't matter if it "wasn't your fault" because you're shy, you gave them an awful first impression.

It sounds good, but what can I say for the
>"hey did you see/ hey have you heard/ hey thats a nice/ what are you up to tonight (in a non asking out kinda way)

part. What can I talk about? /tv/ is like the only thing I know.
>> Anonymous
>>310916

Shhh. This isn't high school. Everyone is an adult now and they're no different from you just because they're a few years younger. Many first year students are loads more experienced and intelligent than fourth years. This isn't even to mention the fact that a first year student is not always going to be 18, people start college at all ages and A LOT of the first year students on my campus are 20-25.

Don't look down at people for such superficial bullshit reasons. Why would you care if other people think it's "normal" to talk to first year students? Fuck them, talk to whoever you want, think for yourself.

what you should have said is 'i love you' and them punched her in the face before raping her multiple times.

eat the body. it's the only way.

ITT: We realize people generally don't care about your looks and shit if you're a nice, talkative person.

I wish the rest of 4chan's social recluses could understand this so I stop seeing "BAWWW WHY I CANT GET GF ;_;" threads.

I honestly think women are just like men. when they say hello, they are INSTANTLY sizing you up as a mating partner. Its what you do with your first impression that counts. If you say hello, talk to them a bit, try to make them laugh without looking like you are trying too hard, you could easily end up in a relationship with any girl who makes the first effort and says 'hello, whats up'.

At the end of the day OP all girls are shit bags from the pretty to the ugly, and they are all shit bags in the same way. You need to take advantage of every first move a pretty girl makes. You wont always get into a relationship, but you are more likely to than if you dont.
>> Anonymous
>>311088

yeah...or theyre just trying to make conversation out of boredom

stop overthinking shit like this, just because someone greets you does not mean they want a relationship, damn

Actually, YOU learn to read. My post did not imply that the OP wanted a girlfriend. My post implied that people generally do not care as long as you're a cool person.

I only applied it retroactively and proactively to the thousands of "I can't find a girl" threads, because the problem is never your looks, it's your personality and spirit that attracts people. This doesn't specifically have to apply to dating or sex, just friendships. People are not as cold as 4chan thinks, the reason nobody talks to the typical Internet nerd type is because the typical Internet nerd type is not a nice person and never says anything in real life. They don't care about your acne, pencil neck or glasses. I've seen tons of dorky looking people who hang out with the jocks and hot girls.

This advice applies to any social situations. Being nice and talkative gets you friends and it greatly increases your chances of finding a significant other.

So, yeah, I hope you can figure this out next time instead of being a poor reader who needs everything broken for him. Dumbass.
