What the fuck is alkaline water?
>> Anonymous
most things we drink and eat are acidic, including soda, orange juice, even bottle water.
alkaline water is the opposite, it's basic

seems like complete and utter quackery

humans have gotten along just fine drinking pH <7 water for years and years and years

I don't really see how it would significantly do anything. The body maintains a certain pH for everything, like the pH of your blood if you aren't sick/dying/dead is always going to be between 7.35 and 7.45. These pHs are maintained by a system of buffers, so any increase in acidity or alkalinity is going to cause the buffer system to nudge in the opposite direction and null any effect the original substance had. And anyway what would "alkaline water" have that Tums or other antacids don't? If for whatever kooky reason you want more weak bases in your diet there are much cheaper ways to get them.

You guys realize that regular drinking water is not pH 7.0.

Carbon dioxide is dissolved in water forming carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is a weak acid. Some of it gives off a proton and becomes bicarbonate. Bicarbonate also acts as a weak acid. Some of it gives off another proton to become carbonate ions.

Oh yeah. Forgot my point.

The point is that pretty much all drinking water, whether that's the water out of your tap, your water purifier, or a bottle, is slightly acidic.
