I am reasonably overweight, but my house just always lacks food, so I usually eat out. What are the essential groceries to be able to eat healthy?

Oatmeal, chicken breasts and lots of fresh/frozen fruits and vegetables. I'm sure you can figure out how to make a bowl of oatmeal or put a piece of fruit in your mouth.

month number one

buy a mega sack of oatmeal eat the biggest bowl of it you can every morning. figure out how to enjoy it, and do so. do that for a month.

month two

start looking to clean up your protein. cut out pork and beef, unless we are talking trimmed and lean. favor chicken breasts, skinless, and tuna or salmon and eggs for your protein. take any vegetable oil other than olive oil and throw it out. butter is OK, but that little stick better last you a month. next, find a legume that you can enjoy. try out lentils, black beans, kidney, white beans, peas, etc. start building your food around complex carbs and clean protein. work a single piece of fruit into your diet every single day. apple, banana, orange. whatever. like salads? good. use them.

month three
try to stop eating bread except on cheat day(s), and only buy from a bakery, and no white bread.

do a six day on the above diet mods, and one day of cheat day per week. also, every couple of months, schedule an entire cheat week (can coincide with holidays, birthdays, etc.). without these cheat days, you will burn out and resume your poor habits.

good luck anon

Buy everything a grocery store sells that doesn't come pre-made in a box.

Fresh fruits, vegetables, cut meats, fish.
Frozen cut meats.
Fresh (where possible, dried otherwise) flavouring: garlic, ginger, lemon/lime, herbs (oregano, parsley, dill, etc).

If you like your delicious carbs, add some fresh bread, oats, rice, potatoes, lentils.

Honestly, after changing to fresh foods and homecooking everything for a while, you realize how utter shitballs all pre-cooked and fast food is. It's fucking disgusting, and should only be eaten in dire circumstances.

Are cheat days really necessary? I read somewhere that you MUST have some sort of day to pick out to sustain a fast metabolism.

Jack in the Box tacos look like shit and barely resemble tacos but man those things are good. I can eat like 8 in one sitting.

I have read that cheat days help reactivate metabolism from various trustworthy and some dubious sources... so I won't start preaching cheat days based on hard facts and numbers, but I also can't argue that it seems to also have an effect to a point. In spite of that, I recommend cheat days purely for psychology, because thats what works for me. The other part is likely unproven at this point, but remains a benefit worth looking into, IMO

If in doubt, read the ingredients list on the nutrition label. It should have 2 or three ingredients MAX: peanuts, peanut oil, etc.
