Hey /fit/, for some reason, every now and then I get a clicking noise in the right side of my jaw when I move it (to chew etc.) it sounds similar to when you eat pop-rocks or similar things. What the hell is this?

It sucks.

Oh, so I'm not the only one. It can be very annoying when I'm trying to eat at times.

I had this happen one morning when I slept weird with my jaw not resting in it's natural, default location. It was off to one side. When I woke up regular chewing made it make that sound you describe. It went away after a couple hours for me.

If I have this should I go see a doctor? Can it eventually continue on to cause harm?

Eh, TMJ varies. You have your average light case where no pain occurs in any form around the jaw/ear and then the kind that does. I've had light popping/cracking since I was 14, and I can even make a LOUD popping noise with the left side of my jaw. Dentist told me to knock that the fuck off though, since I was literally forcing my jaw bone through my tendon? I forget what it was he said, but it was tantamount to me grinding my tendon to shit.

He also said it was normal, everyone has it. Obviously some more than others, causes? Bruxing, eating too fucking much for your mouth to handle, and stretching your mouth more than you should be. Could be more, can't remember. Try googling it. If you have no pain though, I don't see why you'd bother going to the dentist/doctor for it. Just bring it up during your next checkup.

Hrmm, I'm not sure if i'd call it pain. It just feels a little swollen and annoying.. maybe a slight pain. I just don't want it to keep going for years and then require some sort of operation that could have been remedied easy early on.

Wouldn't hurt to get it checked then, better safe than sorry I suppose.
