This thread is about your experiences with crossfit. I came from a heavy lifting/strenght building background. A few curls for the girls but mostly heavy fuckin SQUATZ, DED LIFTS, and of course BENCH PREZZ.I've done this off and on my whole life but for the last 5 years i've been pretty consistant, 5x5 splits, MAX-OT, etc... But then I found out about crossfit from my pankration class.

I started doing crossfit about 8 months ago and my gains have gone through the fucking roof! I have more energy than every, i can lift a FUCK-TON more than evar, and people stop me and ask wtf I am taking 'cuz they want some too. Now I'm not gonna lie, this shit is hard at first (at least comming from my background which had very little if any high intensity lifts). But the results speak for themselves.

Anyone else have any similar experences wtih crossfit?

pic very much related!

Look at those sweater puppies... DAYUM.

Also... I've been crossfitting(ish) for a few months. I've mostly been working my way up with the pull ups and stuff so I can actually atempy the WODs properly. I still need to get into a gym and do some lifting, so far I've had to limit myself to the pull up/dip/squat WODs... but they're coming along great.

Once I get lifting I can only imagine how quickly I'll gain.

keep it up dude and get in the gym ASAP. Took me a full month to do the WOD as RX'd, and it was cuz I practiced in a gym with lighter weights, and you're right, your fuckin results will EXPLODE!!!!!111eleven

WOD = workout of the day
RX = as prescribed meaing no subs for weights or reps, i.e.

Hey Steve Dave, did you work out today?

Why yes I did Mark John, I did the WOD.

Well Steve Dave, did you RX it?

Of course friend Mark John, I did RX it and it was gooooooood!
>> Anonymous
So... is the W(orkout) O(f) (the) D(ay) ALL you do? Or is there more to it? It doesn't seem like a lot.

For example, Wednesday was "Shoulder Press 3-3-3-3-3 reps". 5 sets of 3? For one whole day?
>> Anonymous
>>143398
Read the FAQ, I'm pretty sure somewhere in there they talk about how the WOD is sufficient if you're already training for another sport.
>> Anonymous
>>143398
That was an easier day. It varies a lot. Some days the WOD is impossible.
>> Anonymous
>>143406

>Part of the crossfit philosophy includes pursuing/learning another sport or activity, and many crossfitters are also martial artists and competitive athletes in a variety of disciplines.

This is their answer. It makes sense, especially considering the name: Crossfit. But I'm curious... can you work in Crossfit to a lifting routine? They don't mention Crossfit being supplementary/complementary to a lifting routine, only other athletic endeavors.

It seems like I would be able to do most of the WODs along with my workout routine, but, since you have more experience with the program, I'm curious what you think.

yes that is it. I know it seems wierd and funky, but when you realize you use the weight which you can ONLY get 3 reps, it becomes a lot. Also, look at what we did before that (its a 3 on 1 off set) on monday we did:
"Jason"

For time:
100 Squats
5 Muscle-ups
75 Squats
10 Muscle-ups
50 Squats
15 Muscle-ups
25 Squats
20 Muscle-ups

on tuesday we did:
Run 1 mile
Two minutes of each:
Row
30 pound Dumbbell thrusters
20 pound Medicine ball cleans
Double-unders
Pull-ups

therefore, for our final day, its simply strength. THis is of course after the Crossfit warmup which is
3 Sets of 15:
Pullups
Pushups
Situps
Back Ext.
Dips
Overhead Squat (45lb. bar)

Try it for 1 month, but be sure to scale the shit down quite a bit! This program changes lives.

>>143420

Yeah, I came across Crossfit a couple of days ago and I did the "Jason" routine - I tried not to scale down, but I had to on the last Muscle-up; it was pretty difficult. Some days, though, like the Military press day on Wednesday, seem far too easy. I guess I'll just develop my own method of incorporation and see how it goes - it does seem like a good, comprehensive program that I'd like to check out.

>>143420

Sorry. I forgot to ask in my previous post. Is the Crossfit warm-up you mentioned every non-Rest day?

Thanks.

I have tried what you are talking about (i'd do my heavy lifting first then do crossfit) and it worked out great, except I never got to see my g/f cuz i was at the gym so much. WIth just doing crossfit i'm in and out in less than an hour. Whereas my usual heavy training would be 1-1.5 hours. If you have the time it is excellent but for beginners, I HIGHLY suggest you just do the crossfit workout for 1 month.

You obviously know how to heavy train, but if you are just starting a new routine like Crossfit, devote all your attention to it to avoid injury. Believe me, you work muscles you've never worked before, I've got the SEX muscles like a muthafucka 1 month in when I first started HOLEEEEEY SHIEEETTT!

Crossfit is for men who like beads to be inserted and removed from their anuses.

Not saying that this is a completely bad thing, just the truth.
>> Anonymous
Most of the routines look deceptively easy to the casual observer. Do not be fooled. All of the WODs will say "Post time (or load or reps) to comments". That's the beauty of Crossfit, it's as hard as the user makes it. For example, their 'Fran' benchmark WOD :

-Thruster 95 lbs
-Pull-ups

21-15-9 reps, for time

The workout is no problem if you take your time. Actually its very easy. But once you decide to do it as fast as you can, the difficulty will seem like to go up like by 10x. Starting out, my time was around 25 minutes to finish Fran, no joke. Now, I can finish that workout in 9 minutes. Pretty average, compared to some genetic freaks finishing in sub 3 min times. Watch:

The thing is... most of the time, when the workout is too easy, its because the athlete isn't pushing himself enough.

If the lifts are too easy... add more weight. If the running is too easy, you're not running hard and fast enough. If the pull-ups are too easy, add more weight.

The beauty of the program is that when you manage to start doing the WODs as RX'd in good time, you can keep scaling everything up, so that you are forever challenged.

yea crossfit seems pretty intense....my friend told me about it..but i have a question.....we are suppose to do the WOD's right? and skip all our old stuff?
>> Anonymous
>>145106

Depends what the old stuff was. Mostly yes... to start with, the WOD will fuck you up enough that you really won't be able to effectively do any other workouts.

As you progress, you can start adding weight workouts maybe, or other metcon stuff on rest days (martial art training).

Ideally, you should probably start with a strength program (starting strength) for a few months, which will give you a solid foundation both physically and in terms of form and movement. Then you can move over to crossfit having your form already established... and work from there.. maybe doing some strength work on the easier days.

Either way, if you can perform the Crossfit WODs as RX'd in times comparable to the pros, you're already in immense physical shape... but you can still specialise in one area (lifting, swimming, running) etc. with specialised workouts in addition to the WOD.
>> Anonymous
yea dude...thanks.....i just asked that question....cuz some crossfit wods seem very short....like 2 days ago it was shoulder press with 3 sets of 6....i go 2 college, and if i go 2 the gym just for that....it would be a waste....
>> Anonymous
You do the WOD, set it up as challenging as you can, and after a week, all your muscle groups get a workout?
>> Anonymous
idk, it just seems 2 short, if the wod is short, maybe ill incorporate running or something
>> Anonymous
>>145136

i know it's been said a thousand times, but the WOD is always enough to smoke your body.

do it as heavy and hard as you can. like one poster said, a 30 minute fran is nothing, but an 8 minute fran will have you worn out all day.

6 sets of 3 overhead presses isn't that hard, unless you've picked a weight that takes you to failure every single set.

plus, crossfit is 3 days on 1 day off. if they don't have some light days, your body would be extremely angry at you.
>> Anonymous
yea....ur right, guess i never thought of it like that either...thanks fit
>> Anonymous
Crossfit is the only program that isn't boring as all hell.

My favorite picture.
>> Anonymous
>>145120

If 3 sets of 6 is too easy, its because you don't have enough weight on the bar and you're resting too much in between sets.

The idea is to go flat out, with as much weight as you can handle...
>> Anonymous
>>145207
Well, you ought to give yourself 3-5 minutes of rest between sets still. Otherwise, muscle fatigue and CNS stress will stop you from going progressively heavier. For REALLY heavy stuff, like 1RM deadlifts, you may even need 5-7 minutes of rest.

If you're feeling breathless after a few sets of heavy lifting, you're doing it wrong; if you have any breath left after a circuit workout, you're doing it wrong again.

I clicked the video link yesterday to see the Fran workout, and those guys made it look so easy I thought it was nothing since I'm in damn fantastic shape. Or so I thought. I did it at 9 this morning and HOLY SHIT. It messed my shit up, I puked for the first time during a workout since I wrestled in high school.

Crossfit fucking rocks
>> Anonymous
>>145324
before anything else, i had a 4:50 fran last time it came up and will be <4 next time. that video is shit for form, thrusters aren't to full lockout/extension. sacrifice a lot of form, but lots of intensity, strong work.

the real bitch is elizabeth

squat cleans
ring dips
21 15 9

w/ power cleans i'm right about 5 minutes... squat cleans prolly closer to 10

cf for life.

Good thread overall. The idea and method of crossfit is great, but all the soccer moms, valley girls, and homo firefighters that have swarmed it ruined any potential image it could have had.

Your typical crossfit gym is a joke, true athletes are not there for the social benefit or obligations.
