i have the exact same problem.
I've tried Head and Shoulders for many years, and now recently tried Nizoral for a few months, still to no avail.
i cut my hair short often to try to alleviate the itch but even that doesn't work.

anyone know the secret to getting rid of dandruff?

I too have dandruff. It doesn't make me itch but if I do itch or if I just rub my hair...winter comes early. It's kind of embarrassing and I try to avoid the rubbing...I have never tried a dandruff shampoo...to embarrassed to ask, I guess.

I've heard you should drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep so if you aren't doing that you could try...however, I drink lots of water and I get 8+ hours of sleep almost every day, and I still get it.

I've always had dandruff. Actually, psoriasis. I recommend Neutragena Extreme Strength. Make sure it has coal tar. I use it once a week and it works absolute wonders.

good shower/life routine for not getting dandruff:

1) shower at night, not in morning, so your scalp will get a little greasy while you sleep instead of being dry as fuck for part of the day at work/school/mom's basement
2) shampoo
3) rinse
4) use your hands to squeegee as much water out of scalp as possible
5) put in conditioner
6) wash body, face, etc.
7) rinse body
8) turn shower to faucet/bath style
9) make water coooold
10) rinse conditioner out
11) done
12) enjoy no dandruff

Is it dandruff or dead follicles? If you are losing your hair, it itches like mad. Shit sucks.
