If you are wanting to improve your pushups, then look into "greasing the groove" technique by Pavel Tsatsouline (in his book Naked Warrior). Basically you do a couple of push-ups; but not so many that you are at failure. So, if you can only do 4 or 5 max, do 2 or 3. Do these small sets throughout the day. A good method is to make yourself do it every time you leave/enter a particular room, or just set an alarm. You can do this every day without needing a rest day. After a few weeks, take a rest day and the next day warm up and then see what your max push-ups are; it should have improved. Then take a rest day and after that get into the method again. As you improve, increase the number of reps, still keeping it under your max.
I'm pretty sure that you probably aren't eating enough and that's why you are so weak and not improving at all. OK, so you aren't necessarily trying to get big, but you still need to eat plenty of good stuff.
