Dear /fit/,

What exercises could I do to strengthen the deep muscles around my major joints so that my joints wouldn't give in as much when I don't want them to?

I'm extremely flexible. As I recall, I didn't have a Beighton score of 5 when I was a kid (although I, along with one other similarly supple kid, were noticeably more flexible than everyone else in our elementary school) but instead through stretching myself I've gotten to this point. I stretched my thumb just for the lulz.

My supple joints are good for making high kicks in karate a piece of cake but they're a bit troublesome. Sometime after I was able to do the splits my hips started popping. It's like my hips stiffen slowly and then when I pop them they're released and feel more loose. The reason I pop them is because they'll get popped anyway when doing kicks or in certain positions. And sometimes it really hurts if they pop when I move really hard and fast. Also I feel that I'm prone to overextending motions too much. It appears that I have to move my body in bigger arcs than others.

I don't understand the knee backward thing.

The pain from popping my hip when snapping a hard side kick after not having popped it for a couple of days is breathtaking.

That scale seems like it measures joint instability more than it measures any kind of useful flexibility. Perhaps you should reevaluate what you see as your flexibility needs and figure out what level of flexibility vs. joint stability would be optimum for your lifestyle and sport.

Yeah, it's the Beighton scale for determining if one has hypermobile joints. I'm not quite sure if I have hypermobile joints since I wasn't able to do these things st raight from the start. It doesn't say anywhere whether that's relevant.
