Hey /fit/, Im thinking of taking a martial art. There are a few jujitsu academy's and a ton of karate places nearby and I heard about a MMA place.
The reason I want the training is to get fit obviously but also to use as a police officer.

TL;DR: What martial art should I learn?

Thats a bit more of a...striking art. Always looked like a pissed off dude just running up and punching people that werent ready for it.

Learn at least 1 striking art and 1 grappling art.

Suggested striking: Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, or Wing chun.

Suggested grappling: Sambo, Aikido, judo, or Jujutsu.

I suggest doing research on each martial art in your area, and deciding what you think is best for you. Most Dojos will let you sit in on one of their classes to see if its what you want.

your karate is ineffective against my handgun

Fuck this striking/grappling MMA wank-off bullshit.

Krav is a fucking practical martial art for real life situations. Not some faggot man-wrestling bullshit.

Pretty basic, more than likely how it would happen

lol unless the gunman is incredibly nervous or skittish (like a crackhead might be) and fires as soon as the other guy moves.

If anyone could teach it I would take it so fast, once again though its one of those striking arts which if youre a cop and you hit someone your ass is more than likely sued

No crack head owns anything, not a real one anyways, especially a hand gun. Crack dealer maybe.

You can still get sued for pinning someone too hard or for snapping someone's elbow during an armbar. It all depends on your control.

Punching someone is almost never a defensive action, very hard to explain in court why you have 6 of someones teeth in your knuckles where as you can break an arm and say he threw a punch that you arm bared. Basically its harder to determine whats reasonable force in striking, especially when someone wont go down.

Check out the various schools in your area, go to the one you like the most. I've done a bunch and it came down to the focus of the school rather than the specific style

Oh, and Northern Shaolin Kungfu FTW!

Grappling is a pretty intense workout.

BJJ or Judo.
>> Anonymous
BJJ is pretty good, you'll learn alot within the first month
generic karate is discipline bullshit for two years lol punch air
go to gym, ask around, try a few places and join the one you enjoy the most

Doesn't the gay kind of rub off on you after awhile though?

My idea of a good time isn't getting choked out by another man's crotch

Where are you thinking of taking it? I hear the zoo's nice this time of year.

Well:
1. girls actually take BJJ. Granted, it's only 1 or 2 per class, but they exist.
2. Yes, grappling has homoerotic overtones. You get over it because somebody's trying to break your arm.

since you're a police officer, fuck grappling cause it's not like you want to get down on the ground with a criminal only to get stabbed by his friend.

try to find a Krav Maga class, and if that fails, boxing, kick boxing or Muay Thai. anything that relies on standing up.

I do mma, and it's mostly ground game. great workout, but the ground is so not ideal for fighting irl, especially not if your life is on the line.
>> Anonymous
Avoid fighthing on the ground. Things get messy when your opponent is getting backup.
Go for Muay Thai or any boxing art,
I would go for Jeet kun do. Very practical and it has no bullshit stances like karate etc.

Many cops and firefighters train at my BJJ gym, its more or less to stay fit, and its fun as hell, but if you're looking for something you might be able to do while on the street, try Muay Thai.

I don't know what kind of jackie chan fantasies you're having but you're not going to ever engage in hand to hand combat while you have a gun. If someone comes in a 10 foot radius of a pig in what's perceived to be a threatening manner (for example reaching for a wallet) standard procedure is for you and your partner to empty the whole clip into their nigger face. It's either you or them.
