Chances are, you're going to have at it pretty often. If you carry that out through your older years, (by older years, I mean after your 20s), that thing WILL be causing damage to your joints further in your life. Even now, you'Re probably causing damage to it now, which will only be a hassle later.
Buy a stationnary bike to build up your cardio and knee surrounding muscle separately for the treadmill. Then have fun with the treadmill.
Then again, this kind of usage is only if you're madly going at it, flailing your arms around and all. Although can't hurt to build a little knee muscle beforehand, even if it's not exactly the same group of muscle than you're going to use for running.
