Hey /fit/, I'm 243lbs, 5"10. I was thinking of going on a low carb diet to get myself down to 190lbs. I doubt it would be possible to go much lower as I'm pretty sure I have large bones from being obese since I was 4 (I'm 18 now). Plus my main goal isnt to be a topless warrior, but rather someone who can buy 3 for $10 shirts and have them fit fine.

I know low carb diets have a very bad image but I believe it's just a crock of bullshit. Anyone had success with low carb dieting?

Atkins is unhealthy and dont work, try to cut your calorie intake and do regular exercise, its easy as pie

You'll lose like 20 pounds quick, and then plateau. Atkins diet really is just a fad. There is no "quick and easy" solution to losing weight. It takes work and dedication.

I did atkins for about 2 months and lost about 10-15 lbs. BUT your body will crave the carbs, you will cheat and you will regain the weight. I was cranky as fuck. Besides beef, cheese and eggs all day everyday. Blah

get rid of the snack foods you surround yourself with constantly, try the elliptical machine at the gym (better for fatties than the treadmill), and don't give up after 10 minutes/2 days of working out.

I survived for months off of a bag of beef jerky and a couple of powerades a day. Of course I was working, so I didn't have time to eat. I lost weight real fast and It justified eating nothing but beef jerky. I wouldn't suggest cutting too many carbs if you are going to be physically active, though. I also wouldn't expect you to lose much weight without being physically active.

you need carbs.
a healthy diet should be something like 65% carbs, 25% protein, and 10% fat.

if you haven't exercised in a while, then you should cut calories and see where you are going after you plateau, but if you plan on being more fit, then I suggest going in a 65/25/10 direction when choosing your calories.

OP here, I forgot to mention I won't be doing Atkins. I only posted the picture because I knew people would instantly recognise it.

I still plan to eat non-starchy vegetables liberally at meal times and eat a piece of fruit a day. I am just not eating junk food, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, etc.

I will be doing H.I.I.T, weights and lighter cardio.

You're all saying that your body NEEDS carbs, but there are other ways your body can get energy... Heard of ketosis?

Not trying to put a damper on your ambitions, trying to change is a great thing and I wish you luck. If you try to do HIIT without carbs, you won't last two weeks. That shit is brutal, you NEED energy for that.

You need to examine your goals more closely, if you want to lose weight AND get bigger, do one at a time (I recommend losing weight first, although you'll have more to build muscle with if you're bigger). Don't try to do both at once, although you can still lose weight and get toned, don't try to bulk up.

Ketosis works, but not for HIIT. Imagine trying to drag race in a hybrid, because petrol fuel is "bad for the car". For high performance activity, high performance fuel is necessary.

Well I'll post back in 2 weeks about my progress with H.I.I.T, if I'm still going strong maybe people will need to reconsider their thoughts about low carb diets :)

I am planning to lose fat first then get a bit bigger. I'm not too fussed about being huge, I just want to be average weight/size.

Well, good luck I guess. They're two completely different programs with different techniques and goals. If you try to mix medicine you usually end up poisoned and dead.

I've been on the Atkins diet for about 10 years or so, give or take a few. And I weight about 300 pounds before I started the diet. I'm 190 pounds today. I heard the same stuff about the diet being unhealthy, and that it wouldn't work. But trust me, its fine. The nice thing about the diet is you're allowed to cheat every now and then. At first I would give myself one day every month to eat whatever I wanted. But as I hit my weight loss limit, I eventually went up to every Sunday I would let myself taste the carbs. Of course, don't over do it on those days, and just stick to normal diet tips, such as eating 3 meals, and eating normal portions of meat, instead of large ones.

I wish you luck!

Ultra low carb diets work.
They are amazing way to cut after bulking and still eat (and take in protein).
If you OP is JUST trying to lose weight, low-carb plus orlistat (Alli or Xenical) reduces your caloric intake to practically nothing.

I want to talk with your doctor and btw you cheated and lost weight because you cut calories.

He's going to attempt HIIT. I wouldn't say he's lazy, just overly optimistic. To the OP, make sure you're doing real HIIT, not just making yourself 'tired'. An example would be 100 burpees in ten minutes.

hey OP, nothing wrong with Aktins-like diets in the short term. If nothing else I would try to limit my carb intake to those days (and times of day) when I'm getting a solid workout. Ketosis test strips are available at any pharmacy and they're a cheap and easy way to keep tabs.

Also, don't rely on weight so much as a measure of progress. Get your bodyfat tested with both skin-fold calipers and a "bod-pod" or underwater measurement. Get a tape measure.

You're going to be hungry (and probably miserable) most of the time. If you're dieting and not constantly hungry, chances are that your metabolism is compensating. Short of taking stimulants, the only way to counter-act that is by exercising more or mixing up your meal times and amounts.

Atkins for a few months > Fat fuck for life.
