Hi /fit/

I've always eaten very well and kept up with cardio. A few weeks ago I decided to try and build some muscle by getting more protein in my deit and doing weights and push ups.

I'm doing everything the textbook way except for the fact that I drink quite a lot of alcohol at weekends (sometimes up to 10 units, but usually about 4). How detrimental to my workout is this? What are alcohol's effects on fitness?

On a side note, I have a friend who bodybuilds and is in really good shape, but whenever I see him out or at parties he drinks and smokes just like everyone else. I've yet to ask him what his fitness regime is. Do you think he might be doing absolutely shit loads of cardio? Or something else?

I'm the same way. Boozing on the weekends is my cheat meal, that's how I see it. Can't be too bad.

Cheat meal eh... well that's a pretty good way of looking at it.

I have pretty much same situtation. I workout through weekdays and then reserve one or two days to go out and have some alcohol, allthough my units go even up to 18 sometimes so... However I still gain muscle and aint getting fat. Though I guess I need to drop the units and times per month if I want to get bodyfat% down more.
I have heard that alcohol slows down your recovery progress(cant confirm that, but I have been told so by someone that might know about it better. I dont see you getting fat if you run couple times a week and have that amount of alcohol at weekends.
Also working out under the influence of alcohol is dangerous and you shouldnt do it when you have hangover either.

I would say it is very detrimental, but you can still make gains while maintaining a social life. The extra calories are not even the issue, those can easily be worked off or worked into your daily caloric intake. The problem is that binge drinking degrades and can even halt testosterone production. It also spikes stress hormones. Furthermore, since it damages the liver, it decreases liver glycogen. Your friend may very well have outstanding genetics and thus be able to balance the two well. Just imagine if he focused solely on bodybuilding

Maybe it is outstanding genetics (he seems to be good at absolutely everything), but I'm sure he values his good social life over being able to get an even better body than he already has.

The units of alcohol under my fitness regime are suppressed by a single party state.

They need liberating.

People who don't drink alcohol because of some silly "healthy lifestyle" make me lol so bad, enjoy wasting your youth and possibly life.
