What's this HIIT or whatever I keep seeing around /fit/? nt just what it stands for, but what all it means doing.

high intensity interval training.

Basically any activity at 90% of maximum for x seconds, and a lower intensity for y seconds. usually y is less than twice x.

SO, sprint for 15 seconds, walk/jog for under 30, go back to sprinting for 15, etc. Works on any activity you can reach a high intensity doing.

You begin your routine with a 4 minute day, and slowly work your way up to 15'ish minutes. Only do it at most every other day; your body needs to recover from the high intensity.

The main goal of HIIT is to build up an oxygen debt. If you are resting 'til you get your breath back, you are doing it wrong. You should always, even in your rest periods, be at least slightly out of your comfort zone, and most people say they're half dead by the 8 minute mark. I personally make it only 6 minutes most of the time.

So you just keep alternating high intensity with low? Are there rest periods, or you just do it until you can't anymore, or what?

Because yourdoinitrite. The majority of /fit/ does "HIIT" on machines or thinks sprinting is just running outside your comfort zone for 15 mins.

You'll also see the Tabata protocol thrown around whenever HIIT is brought up. Don't be confused, all Tabata workouts are HIIT-style workouts, but not all HIIT regimens are Tabata. HIIT can have varying work/rest ratios, but a Tabata protocol workout must have a 20sec/10sec split.

bump plox for a through HIIT explanation, including rest period times and when you do them.
