Sup /fit/, I've posted this on TRV but I want your take on the matter...

In a few weeks I'm going to be visiting my boyfriend in Japan. I'm worried about jetlag. Are there any foods I can eat/things I can do to make myself as energetic as possible when I get off that plane? I've heard of everything from making sure you sleep, making sure you stay awake, anti-jet lag diets, etc. but I have no idea what works.

Thanks /fit/!

Melatonin. Learn about it from the internets, purchase it at the drugstore, take it.

If possible, begin to shift your sleep schedual and get plenty the days befor you go. Other than that, take a caffiene pill or some crack when u get there.

Meh, don't worry about it. I only had jetlag maybe the first two days. Just get some sleep on the plane, or stay up depending on what the Japanese time is.
Like, if you're gonna land at noon, set your watch for Japanese time and have it wake up up by when you'd usually wake up, if that makes sense to you.
I had to go to Japan from Florida, so I know a bit about this...

Oh? How was your trip? Was jetlag worse coming back (it'll be my midterms time, lol)?

It was probably worse coming back because I was soooo depressed about leaving (I was there for a year and was reverse-home sick) and on the way to Japan, I was so excited about going there. The trip itself wasn't all that bad, but both my planes at Detroit were delayed. And the movies sucked. Could they have picked a movie worse than Jersey Girl? Seriously!
But Japan fucking rules!

If you're coming from America, don't even worry about it. Just stay up until a decent bedtime and you're golden.
Coming back on the other hand...

Lol k, thank you so much for your help!

Also, to melatonin anon--I try to avoid supplements since my health isn't the best to begin with and my mom used to fiddle around with them to bad ends. Is melatonin very safe?

The only negative side effect reported frequently with melatonin use is abnormally vivid dreaming. Don't drive or operate heavy machinery while taking melatonin. Individuals with auto-immune disorders or orthostatic intolereance should not take melatonin.

melatonin anon here. studies we're done where megadoses of something crazy like 50000 grams we're giving to a bunch of people, no side effects found. the only thing i'm concerned about is taking it for extended periods of time, i don't know about beyond 9 weeks. it exists naturally in the body.

time zone crossing flyers take it all the time. it works with a night or two, so just have 1-3 grams a night. that's it. since you'll be visiting, take for say two nights before going, and two nights before coming back. so you can walk off the plane in the correct time zone.

yeah, no machinery. that's all.

just stay awake until it's time for the japs to go to sleep.

I'm going to guess that the doses weren't quite 50000 grams. Since most people would probably object to eating ONE HUNDRED AND TEN POUNDS of melatonin.

110 pounds? I have to admit, I laughed.
