I started running outside Monday after three-four months of treadmill running. Yesterday, my upper legs hurt after running, and continued to hurt. They hurt when I first started today, and hurt even worse now. What do I do? I tried two Advils this morning, but they did nothing. I run a little more than 4.5 miles. Of course, I take little breaks to catch my breath.

oh, if I didn't make it clear, the short breaks are just walking, not actually stopping.

lol...

That would probably be the stiff road surface vs. the nice soft treadmill surface.

Solution? Rest up until they stop hurting and then stick to dirt trails/running tracks or try for some nice running shoes if you don't already have some. You may also get used to it if you try to ease yourself into road running.

I should have asked what kind of pain, really. Is it burn pain or injury pain? If it is burn pain, then you just need to tough it out or stretch if you really want to alleviate it. If it is injury pain, you just need to minimize the weight put on your legs and let 'em heal. Then do what I said in>>88114

I'm not OP but if I'm puffing like a fatty is there anyway to get more in shape for running? I'm not even fat, just out of shape. Should I do more squats or something or is running moar the only option?

I choked a fucking lung up after attempting HIIT today.

I guess burn pain... I feel it when I walk or crouch down or something.

I did this too, only I just started running out of the blue yesterday. I only went about 2 miles and a lot of it was walking, but my legs are sore as hell today so I skipped running today.

I think I just need to get my muscles in better shape.

If you are ABSOLUTELY SURE it isn't injury pain, doing some light running and stretching could actually flush the lactic acid causing the burning a little quicker. But for chirssake, if you think it could be injury pain (Sorry I can't give you a better distinction between the two) don't do more running until it's healed.

Try HIIT. Sprint for a minute and then rest for a minute, then repeat for as long as you can. Should whip your cardiovascular system into shape quicker than progressive aerobic training would.

that's pretty normal

just continue to run like real men do (that's not on faggy treadmills) and your muscles will get stronger and adapt to the circumstances

When i started out running in january, i couldn't do anything with my legs a day after going at it for 4 miles. Continued to run ~4 days a week and now i did 13 miles yesterday and my legs dont even feel sore today

Wow, 13 miles! Yeah, I guess I'll just continue to run. I ought to adapt to it. I remember the first week of running for the first time in my life a few months ago on the treadmill was hard, but I'll get used to it.

Treadmills don't exactly replicate running on the road. With the moving belt of the treadmill you aren't actually propelling your body, unlike when you're on the road. Take some Excedrine and stretch. You'll be fine in a few days.

This Anon speaks true.

The treadmill cheats your hammys because it's pulling your foot back, as opposed to you propelling yourself forward.

And OP, stretch and hydrate before and after your run. If it's muscle pain, it's just because your legs are waking the fuck up.
