Tell me about the Martial Arts, /fit/. I'm interested in losing some weight (20 pounds would be great), tone some muscle, and learn to defend myself. I also need a new hobby, video games isn't going to carry over ANYWHERE.

So what are the various kinds of martial arts, and what are they good for?

I would just start lifting if I were you. Martial arts don't really change your appearance, but it might help your flexibility/reflexes. Just get really jacked and start carrying a weapon and few people with mess with you. If you really want to though, try out capoeira, it seems like it would build some muscles.

There are tons of Martial Arts, from striking focused to grappling focused. Choose one that looks the funnest and go for it. For self-defense, good negotiation skills are probably the best thing you'll ever have. Most MMA fighters focus on Muay Thai and BJJ.

From what I've seen, the guys who fall in love with martial arts end up learning many styles over their lifetimes. Don't worry about the perfect style, just find a good gym/school/dojo and start learning.

Boxing is my favorite martial art; I recommend it to anyone who'll listen. MMA is good stuff. Traditional martial arts are great if you find the right teacher; stuff like Kyokushin has a long full-contact tradition if that's what you're into. I've heard incredible things about Chinese martial arts, but know less than nothing about them or how to spot a good school.

I didn't say it wasn't good cardio, I just said it wouldn't really make you look better. Maybe I didn't make myself clear, but I think to look more intimidating and bigger, weights are better. MA does tend to be awesome for cardio, I won't deny that.

dont try to be Mr. Rutten...he is fucking insane and trains like a damn grizzly on coke. Your not gonna match his level but if you work towards it you will get in better shape and learn to defend urself.

bas rutten also has some street self defense vids on youtube and places like piratesbay.

I hate to recommend Brazilian Ju-jitsu due to its upheaval from UFC media, but you can't really argue: BJJ for teh win!

Check out some videos of Brazilian Jujitsu, I'm starting it in three months. Right now I'm doing some Krav Maga, which is really cool for self defense but not really a sparring type of budo sport.

Like to throw in that, in the real world (read: post high school), people usually don't get into fights. This is because, in a litigation happy world, people would much rather sue you and hurt you where it really matters (i.e. the pocketbook).

People don't get into dramatic back alley duels, and if you ever DO find yourself in some random fight at a bar or mugged, there is about a ninety percent chance they'll be armed or you'll both have weapons (bottles or something) at your disposal to throw out conventional methods of fighting.

So just realize that you won't be kung fu fighting with your skills. Most martial artists I know do it for the self-improvement and tranquility, or just because it's a hobby of theirs that they happen to take seriously.

Also a 1 on 1 fight is something you shouldn't expect in real life. 1vs2 or 1vs3 is a more realistic approach. Another thing that is sometimes forgotten is the stress reaction that people get when they encounter a life threatening situation. Tunnel vision, having problems thinking properly, and the worst part - forgetting the self-defense techniques that you thought you had practiced into your backbone.

Martial arts probably aren't what you're looking for.

Join a gym and consult your GP about your diet.

Then make a list of all available martial arts in your area and post it in /k/ (Weapons).

Different types of martial arts will fuck with your body in different ways. For example, taekwondo and muay thai are both known for their ability to fuck knees up royally. Kendo/Kumdo will cause dislocated ankles and various injuries to wrists and shoulders. Capoeira trainers have back and hip problems later on in life.

Martial arts do NOTHING to your weight training. It will NOT make you lose all that much weight, or bulk up all that much either. The assumption with martial arts is that you are already fit and ready to give it your all. Even doing simple moves without being fit can cause problems.

Also, be prepared for a body fucking sore all over the first 2-3 months, as well as bruises every sparring night. wood lock, liquid heat and other such menthol balms work wonderfully.

It depends on the martial art, but more importantly, it depends on the dojo and teaching style. I practice Kung Fu where we do lengthy, quite exhausting cardio warm-up exercises, and Capoeira, where the warm-ups are shorter, but where the moves require a lot of upper body strength. Thanks to both styles, I've lost a fair amount of weight and my muscles are showing a fair amount of definition.

You must agree with me that it is a pretty shitty way to try and lose weight or gain muscle. I can see how if this was the only vigorous exercise you ever did, you could possibly lose weight, but the various injuries and weigh-ins for tournaments, as well as the bullying from people who's been there longer are totally not worth it.

I lost more weight and gained more muscle through personal training than my sessions at the dojo.

Umm... N00sFl4sh: your weight training WILL be fucked by your martial arts sessions unless you compensate by increasing your calorie intake. Calories are the one single element that either makes you grow, sustain, or lose musclemass and tire the nervous system (read: decrease power).

... just how long do you expect a martial arts session to last? After 30 min of warm-up, you can only ever hop around for 1 hour tops, and you do this at max, about 3 times a week. It's definitely not anything to increase your calorie intake over, and you will not lose any fat or gain any muscle through martial arts alone.

Most people in martial arts bulk up or lose weight through other training regimes.

I agree it depends on the martial arts and its school. I've been in two different schools of Aikido and both are soft exercises (as reverse to intense), unless in Weapon Training. Weapon suburis do build up muscle, but the thing is you only have it once a week, tops, so it's not gonna do that much for you (not all schools of Aikido have it, too) unless you practice them at home.

Some schools of Aikido do use body-building exercises at the beginning, if I recall correctly, but I can't tell you which exactly :P.

If you can kick, try TKD. Try Jiu Jitsu for grappling. If you wanna learn how to throw good punches, try Wing Chun or Jeet Kune Do.

You know what I hate? How "martial arts" is better than "video games" on a job application. The only thing that could possibly relate to a job is the discipline aspect, and unless you are TEH MASTUR OF KUNGFU, you won't be training this hard or often.

gain muscle, lose fat, work on honing your proprioception and eventually you can begin working on how to fight if it really is necessary at that point.

honestly I wouldn't begin martial arts training until I had been hitting the gym and changed my diet for at least 6 months to a year.

also plyometrics for increased agility.

muai thai or boxing as a striking art.
bjj or judo as a grappling art.

Everything else is a piece of shit in terms of 1) learning self defense 2) striking and sparring- no live sparring = you cannot apply your fancy spinning kicks or faster than eye finger jab to the throat 3) only real athletes train those I have suggested, so they will force you to get in shape

also agreed your first 6-9 months are going to be getting your flabby ass into shape enough to learn anything and most of what you are going to learn is how to stretch and balance its worth it but alot harder if you arent in shape. just to get back to training my fat ass has to lose a shitton of weight and stop smoking. do alot of cardio and running you are going to need your wind when training that's who wins in a fist fight most of the time the guy who has his wind the longest.
