>Much like snake oil, supplements and powders are generally useless.

Is this true? I'm taking a weight gainer supplement to help me gain weight and build muscle. Does that mean it's not helping at all? I'm also trying to have a good diet and eat a lot including drinking milk.

There's a lot of shit out there. The products that do the most good are either food (protein powders) or help out with dietary shortfalls (ZMA and some herbal mixes).

There are no shortcuts. Even steroids require more work than 90% of trainers are willing to put into their programs.

it's not that they aren't willing to put the work required into their program, it's just the amount of work you can do due to lowered recovery time and increased endurance/stamina from taking various supplements and/or steroids allow for you to go far and beyond what is 'normal'.

I've heard of some trainers who will simply not take you on if they suspect steroid use due to possible risk and liabilities of injury due to a specialized program.
supplements are generally good, but only if you're looking up studies and buying shit that matters.

protein, creatine, arginine AKG, and there are some supplements that do seem to work (I've heard lots of success stories from people using products such as 6-OXO).

Most supplements are useless, except for protein powder and creatine. But they are just that: supplements, and can easily be replaced by eating more.
