Hour-long walks are a very good start, as far as exercise is concerned. If you're able to commute to school by bike, that would be a good lifestyle change, too, though it's not always practical. In general, keep to low-intensity aerobic exercise for fat loss and make sure that it's pleasant (like walking your dog) and not a chore.
You're probably right that you need to eat more, and it might be necessary to get up a bit earlier in the morning for breakfast and/or making and packing a lunch to take to school. For dinners, you might consider the so-called half-and-half diet: Serve yourself a moderate amount of food, with half of your plate as vegetables and the other half meat and starch.
You can expect the results to be slow; but you can also expect them to be sustainable, which is more important than quick loss.
