Someone told me I should find my max amount of reps and then do three sets of half that, is your max to the point where your muscles give out? Or should I just quit when it hurts too bad? Pic mostly unrelated

well, what you want to do is not quit at all.
it's easy, and then it gets harder until your arms ache. if you keep going and ignore that, your arms go completely numb. This was how at 15 I did 300 pushups one night, after being pumped from watching fatal fury 1

Just did some pushups, and only managed 27 this time. Chest on the floor to arms straight, back straight, no bouncing. I could do more with cheating form but I refuse to cheat.
