Protein are amino acids. Your muscles are like bunches of tiny little cylinders that come together to form a bigger cylinder, and can be stretched and pulled to move your body. Now, when you use a muscle, you work it. It needs energy and it stores more protein in its tiny little cylinders, so the more protein you take in, the bigger the bulk is. However, it doesn't mean you have to just eat and not work out; you have to actually use the muscle then it starts bulking the protein up. Muscles do consume energy when at apparent rest too, so that's why having a high muscle mass is desirable. If you need a more detailed, scientific explanation, go google it yourself. I just made this easier to read for you.
