wow, are you me? i have about the same issue. got sick, gained weight mostly in the stomach and thighs (not the hips or butt, wtf?). Anyway, since my stamina isn't so good, i plan on riding my bike to work and errands, and swimming.
If you're like me, and what you eat really affects how you feel, you should get some food allergy tests done and make sure you're not shooting yourself in the foot while you are trying to get better. I found out i was sensitive to wheat, soy and other common stuff, and since i started limiting that i feel much better and have started losing weight.
