Sup /fit/

I want to lose fat but I can't lift due to back problems. Could I shed the weight with diet and cardio alone? How important is lifting?

Thanks

If you have back problems you should be fine with all the exercises you can do while laying on your back, i.e. all arm and upper body exercises.

Your abs are fucked, but you could probably still do squats and pull-ups.

Lifting has absolutely nothing with losing weight, so yes. You can.

Lifting raises basal metabolic rate(BMR), which in the long run helps you lose weight. But yes, in the short term it just adds weight.

Diet is the major factor (above 60%) during a weight loss programme. Cardio three times/wk, one hour per session is enough for burn reasonable amount of calories.

lifting not only will help you lose fat faster, but will also help you mantain your muscle mass while losing weight

Muscle weighs more than fat. Replacing fat with muscle adds weight. Trying to lose weight and bulk up at the same time is counter productive, it's better to either focus on losing weight first then bulk up, or vice versa.

My mistake then. Your words are kind of misleading, though.

The guy isn't trying to lose weight, he's trying to lose fat you morans.

The best way to lose the chub is to aerobic exercise(cardio)/calorie count the pounds away, then bulk up with heavy eating and hard anaerobic after(lifting, super squats, burpees etc etc)

If you drop a lot of fat with cardio and a good diet, you'll end up dropping some muscle too
lifting can prevent that
I said mantain not gain

Lifting helps, but is not essential.

Winar. They key is in cardio. Since OP has back issues, the best option is likely swimming laps as running would likely be too much.

losing fat and losing weight are two sperate things. if you're looking to lose FAT all you need to do is revise how your diet works.
people dont get abs from doing 500 sit ups a night.
they do it by eating healthy.
eating right is 70% of working out.
It's your fuel for god sake. it's what determines what you look like.

People don't get abs from not doing 500 situps either. Your pic is pretty much proof, bitch needs some meat on her bones. Meat, not fat.

Just read the link, it has some really great information. It's always better to focus on one or the other, either cardio or muscle building. Why would you work extra hard(almost three times the effort) to maintain muscle while dieting(this is the part that makes it so hard) and doing steady cardio, when it's faster and easier to just split them apart and adjust your diet accordingly.

What goes in your body is important, but eating right isn't going to make your muscles develop. Anyone wanting lean muscle will have to exercise for it, not just eat healthy.

true except the OP is looking to lose fat. if this was a thread about gaining lean muscle i would reccomend 5-6 small servings of food a day, and a roughly cardio orientated workout plan with some lifting of over 15 reps per set. but he's got a fucked back and really the only thing to work with is his diet.

To the OP; you can shed weight just fine with just a diet adjustment and steady cardio. The benefits of lifting is that it raises your BMR. In layman's terms, BMR is the rate that your body burns fat while doing absolutely nothing(sitting on your ass at the office, sleeping etc etc.) Studies have shown that aerobic exercise does little to nothing to boost BMR, the only thing that increases it is anaerobic exercise.
