thinking about buying one... whats the normal weight to start with? for a tall skinny male athletic build...? 35lbs?

I think a better question is why Kettlebells cost so much money.

Don't insert it up your ass and things should be fine.

Overpriced gimmick. Stick with adjustable dumb bells.

Protip: All the exercises that are 'special kettlebell exercises' can be done with dumbbells.

They're just a gimmick. They won't make you any stronger than barbells and dumbbells will. You'll save significant money and can do more exercises if you go with the aforementioned items.

Not to mention the reason people use them is so they can be elitest dickheads about it.

"ZoMGs! RUzzIANS! And Kettleballs! Zoks!"

Spend money: gym membership.
Spend money: 7' Oly barbell, 6x45lbs, 2 adjustable DB bars, 12x10lbs. $145 for the bar, ~$100 for the DB bars, buck a pound for the other stuff. find it cheaper if you can.

Yeah, 35 lbs is what is normally recommended to start with. Understand you're more or less paying for variety. I use my kettlebell often, but not as much as I use free weights. It's not a bad invest IMO.

This.

They have their uses as a conditioning tool, but handly enough to justify the price. Pay a welder to build you an adjustable one.
