>A recently-introduced law in Japan requires all businesses to have mandatory obesity checks (video link) for all their employees and employees' family members over the age of 40, CNN reports. If the employee or family member is deemed obese, and does not lose the extra fat soon, their employer faces large fines. The legislated upper limit for the waistline is 33.5" for men, and 35.5" for women. Should America adopt universal health insurance, could we live to see the same kind of individual health regulations imposed on us by the government? By comparison, the average waistline in America in 2005 was 39 inches for men, 37 inches for women

Avg heights.

US:
Men: 175.8 cm (5' 9.3")
Women: 162.0 cm (5' 3.8")

Japan:
Men: 172.2 cm (5' 7.8")
Women: 158.8 cm (5' 2.6")

This doesn't factor the different genetics between the intensely xenophobic Japanese and the diversity of the American population. I would not impose the same standard on Americans as people who are on average 8 inches shorter than them.

The height difference isn't much. Look up a few posts

I didn't bother to look up a statistic (or make one up) but if you've ever been to Japan, it's clear that you are head and shoulders above most people.
My point being that your average anglosaxon viking descended caucasian can't be held to the same standards as the average native born Japanese.

I remember reading that a thin waist reduces the risk of Alzheimers. I'll try to find a link

Asian people aren't that short. if you're over six feet you'll be taller than most people in Japan but you're also taller than most people in the US.

Your point is that short people can't be held to the same standards as tall people. This is true, but the average height is not much different between the two countries

The average starved negro is taller than them too, dude.

See this alot, but a friend of mine who's currently down there's in the 170-173cm range himself, and he says that he feels like a fucking giant down there.

American people aren't that tall. I was in Boston this year and I felt really tall at 1.8m. I'm sure the average height for american men is under 5'8"

No, my point is genetics. Some people can't help being fat. Some people do it on purpose. And some people just don't try not being fat.
However there are people outside of Japane that due to their genes are simply larger and may never be able to have a 33.5" waist.

Everyone can help being fat.

But I accept your point. Some people have large frames and a lean man could easily have a 33.5" waist.

39" as an average waist is way too high though

>However there are people outside of Japane that due to their genes are simply larger and may never be able to have a 33.5" waist.

complete bullshit, these people (probably you included) are just too lazy to dedicate themselves to cutting that extra fat and changing their diets. No ordinary man has a >33-34 inch waist if his bodyfat% is a a decent level

I think people should have a right to be obese. I also think I shouldn't have to suffer because of or subsidize their lost productivity and health problems. Same with smokers. I live in a country with universal healthcare.

Id have to lose more weight than im comfortable losing in order to hit 33.5" waist. BTW im 6'4" at about 210lbs.

38" I think would be a reasonable limit for men, 36" if they're under 6 feet
>> Anonymous
>>190688

that tells me nothing about your body composition ? you could be completely fat or completely muscular. Bodybuilders have small waists, fat people have gigantic ones. Anyway, a 31" waist is fine. I'm 170 lbs and 29" on the waist

Fucking idiot, its called greed & laziness.

>>190614

A step in the right direction, but fining an employer is just going to force them to take skinny employees over a fat person, that shit wouldnt fly in western countries because of equal rights opportunities.

(Inb4 flame) I would rather see a "Fat tax", those who are deemed obese over a set limit for body fat, body size etc.. would pay tax that would go to the NHS, considering they are going to cost more putting themselves at risk of diseases that would then be costing the NHS more money. It's like giving an alcoholic a new liver then they go drinking again and waste it. Those who are obese are costing the health service millions, if not billions with their obesity related problems and a large number do nothing to change it.

So if I'm reading this right, the law is pressing employers to hire smaller men with and harass them and their families if they start gaining weight, or even fire them because they don't like their eating habits. If these actions are not taken, the government takes money away from the business for not interfering in their personal affairs.

What a shitty country.

Hmm.. what if your bodyfat doesn't really gather at the stomach, I'm a 5'7" woman with a 23 or 24 inch waist but my thighs are epic huge.

Anyway - back to the discussion, does this mean that the employers could fire fat employees because they are costing the company money?

In some way I see the logic behind people taking free health care not unduly burdening their benefactors, but at the SAME time, what are these dicks going to do about it? Force people to the gym at gun point?

Just saying.
>> Anonymous
it makes the whole country feel pressured to eat healthier and have healthier families (so the grandparents arent porking up in retirement) although in the end they do end up being healthier and have more energy to do work. i dont think this is a problem.it would cut down on the obesity related problems. if this happened in america i wouldnt have a problem. almost everone is fat as fuck.they need to lose weight.

Every year the average American height keeps getting lower and lower.

Strangely, the Latino population keeps growing.

Most Latinos I see are a lot shorter on average than Caucasians. Correlated?
>> Anonymous
Countries with socialized medicine tend to have healthier populations.

I wonder if this is because it costs the government less to educate and enforce proper nutrition than it does to pay for the damage of a lifetime of bad choices?

Also, it's probably cheaper to have free needle exchanges than pay for an increased number of AIDS patients.

Speaking of waist size...
