Sup /fit/. I want to start working out and have the simplest of questions. Is a dumbell that is labeled 20lbs a total of 20lbs or is it 20lbs on each side? Same question with a barbell?

In before fucking idiot, troll etc etc...

20lbs total

total.
>> faggot !kzxLmJyzX.
Don't buy them, 20lb total is pretty much useless.

On a side note, when the weights are removable and meant to be held in place by a nut, the weight of just one piece is said on each one.

buy a barbell with up to 100kg in weights, or buy a gym membership.

not OP but why does everyone say the 20 pound or smaller dumbbells are so useless?

Olympic barbell is ~45 lbs. Dumbells I have to hold olympic plates are ~9lbs empty.

because theyre trying to pretend their HUEG

but non adjustable dumbels are a poor investment as they are usually expensive and are either too heavy to use at first, or too light. so theyre only good for a limited time.

so adjustable dumbbells are okay right?

No. It's because 20lb is fuck all regardless of what you are trying to get out of them. Free weights allow you to add/remove for each lift rather than having to buy a large set of about 20 weights. Yeah, you do grow out of them fairly quickly.

Adjustable dumbells are beneficial because you can change them as you get stronger as opposed to having fifty dumbells that are too light for you laying around which is what would happen if you just bought a new dumbell whenever you got stronger.

You can also change them to a weight that is too heavy for negative reps or a weight that is too light for a new exercise.

those are a little better the the amount of weight on them is still very limited.

i would suggest something like these, Olympic dumbbells just go to walmart and drop like 40 bucks on the golds gym pack its god 4 collars, 2 dumbbells and 1 ez curl bar. that way the weight it limited only to how many plates you can fit on them.

it must be nice being able to tell how strong someone is just by talking to him over the internet. hes obviously very new to weight training and probably doesnt have alot of muscle to work with so 20 pounds is more then enough for one arm.

You miss the point again. Look back at>>235125and realize he said "total."

It's not the amount of weight being mocked. It's the realization that fixed weight amounts are not great for home use.

yes, because curling is what a beginner should be doing

When i started out i don't think i had ever used my muscles for anything outside fapping and 20lb was a good starting point. Point is you want to get out of your comfort zone and push yourself rather than dicking around with light weights. Secondly if you buy free weights you can adjust the weight to your starting point if you truly are a weakfag and build up from there.

then the poster should really learn how to talk because including adjectives in a sentence that are have nothing to with it is retarded. if 20lbs wasnt being called into question it wouldntve have been mentioned in the first place.
