Exactly how bad is bread for one's health? Particularly when it consists of a large part of one's diet? Was thinking about my usual diet today during a power outage. It basically out to be bread, pizza, fruit, a bit of fish and chips every now and then, and coke, with bread and coke basically being at the top of the most consumed list. Obviously it's not a good diet, but so far as I can tell I'm in reasonable shape. I'm at a BMI of 26 with a height of 198cm and roughly 100kg, but I recently did a multistage fitness test and made it through 14 stages before I couldn't keep up.

tl;dr Crappy diet, overweight, but healthy. Problems?

Bread is not bad for you. I'd say loose the coke.

geez. Bread is fine, I love bread. If you feel fat lift (freeweights with a barbell) and run (outside).

If you don't routinely monitor what you eat in terms of nutritional content (even if its just a vague- vegetable and fruit with every meal, milk every day, lean meats), and do some type of exercise either as a sport, hobby or lifestyle-

then is it any wonder you are deficient in both aspects? You're not Jesus man, can't walk on water if you don't swim.

A lot of my skinny friends tell me they don't eat salads or drink diet drinks because they're not fat.

Your diet doesn't seem that bad, though, so it's probably not just good luck.

bread is not bad for ones health

you should not listen to supposed food experts...

go to a gym and ask for a food specialist, they will tell you all the same

a ´diet´ i would rather call it a food scedual wich is rich on proteine vitamines carbs a tiny bit of fat and a minumum of 2liters water a day, combine that with sports and enough rest and the pounds will fly...

Bread is good for you, try different bread, dont eat cheap white bread and toast, get some whole grain dark bread this shit is awesome and very healthy. Cut back on butter and fancy sauces for a sandwich and exercise regularly and you will be fine.

>you get hungry faster
On that; when I get hungry, I usually just have a couple of slices of bread, plain. Depending on whether I'm involved in something that distracts me enough to keep me occupied, I'll usually have a good eight to ten slices at least during the day. It's a habit I've had since I was little, I think. I tried switching to wholegrain bread a while back, but I find it's too coarse for me to just eat by itself.

you eat more, so you have a higher calorie intake and you gain weight, if you want to eat less try darker bread (if you dont like the taste try to experiment or buy another sort), easy as pie, i eat 3-4 slices of dark bread (today whole grain with pumpkin seeds) per day and im fine, my BMI is around 22

Whole grain > Whole-wheat > White bread

whole grain/wheat will take longer to digest and the body doesn't store most of it as fat.

It will take more time to feel hungry to refuel if you eat foods that are unprocessed for example pasta/spaghetti vs whole wheat pasta. white rice vs brown rice etc.

If you shop around the price for each (better) alternative is pretty much same.

Bread (and anything containing flours) is bad for your health ONLY if you has deeabeetus. Other than that, your body should handle the calories needed, and store the rest in those beautiful jelly rolls every single girl love.

The coke is about a hundred times worse than the bread for you. However, you should definitely get some more protein in that diet. Fish is a great start, not enough people eat it, and it's a good source of healthy fats, but try to add some additional protein in the form of chicken breast or lean beef. Protein's more filling and you may feel less desire to eat as much bread.

Where did you get that idea? Why on Earth would humanity eat bread since the dawn of history if it was bad for you?

>What's so bad about white bread, anyway? 's basically all the same stuff anyway, no?

White bread is refined, and as a result of that it's digested quicker in your system and causes more sugar to be released into your bloodstream (all carbohydrates are converted into base sugars by the body), which causes an insulin spike. This causes three bad things: one, the body is more likely to store what you just ate as fat rather than using it immediately as energy, and two, if you overload on sugar too often, your body produces too much insulin, overloads, and then SURPRISE, YOU HAVE DIABETES. Finally, the insulin crash causes you feel tired and wiped out after you eat sugar or high-glycemic foods such as white bread and white rice, which leaves you even hungrier for more, in a horrible never-ending cycle.

Slower-digesting carbs such as whole wheat (the word "whole" is important here, plain old "wheat bread" is usually just 60-80% white bread), brown rice, and of course green vegetables are better because they're digested slower and can provide more stable, consistent energy for your body throughout the day. You'll feel less tired if you switch to healthier carbs.

Also, check out quinoa. Google it. It is the GOD GRAIN. Delicious, extremely low glycemic index, and the best source of complete protein you can find in a plant.

there is nothing wrong if you eat white bread once a week for taste, but dont overdo it and try whole graind bread

As has already been mentioned in this thread, switch to thick, grained bread instead.

White bread doesn't have as much fiber as grained bread. As bread in general is quite high in kJ (and can also come with a lot of hidden sugar), it's important to consider how much nutrition you get from eating it.
Grainy bread with sunflower seeds is the way to go for me. Depending on where you live, you might be able to get rye bread which is one thing I find very difficult to live without whenever I'm outside my own country (Denmark).
It was difficult to find it in the US and quite expensive / kg in Australia. :<

Bread is basically my whole diet, bread with low-fat butter and normally deli meats, never cheese. I'm also fat, but that's because of a complete lack of excercise. I've been thinking all my life that the breads are the devil, but lately I've gotten to understand that it's my own lazy ass that needs to be moving, no matter what I eat, and that it would have been far worse if I had eaten other shit instead.

Just exercising will not be the magic solution to fix all your problems. Good health and fitness require three equally important factors: diet, exercise, and rest. And above all these is the most important item of all, education.

Rest? Fuck. I can't even tell if I'm a night or a day person. It's completely random how much or how little I sleep each day and lately it seems like I'm awake for over 24 hours quite often. I hate sleeping, it seems like the biggest waste of time on earth when there's so much to do when you're awake.

God, same. When I was younger I used to sleep for like four hours a night. Kicked ass, but as I got older I started sleeping for longer and longer.

eat wholegrain and you're set

People only stop eating carbs because they don't want to work out. If you eat bread, you will have to work the carbs off and not be a lazy bum. Get to the gym.

Don't confuse "not bad for health" with low calories. There are a lot of things that aren't bad for your health per se (as long as you don't overdo it) but contain a lot of calories. While these might be "good" calories (nuts for example), they're still calories. Intake > expenditure and you grow fat or in the best case don't lose weight.

And what I forgot to say but was the whole point: Bread is pretty high calorie, somewhere between 250-350kcal/100g usually. It's okay for lunch when your body needs energy the most, but bad to snack on.
