Hey /fit/, I was rewatching Survivorman (Arctic episode) and Les mentioned that eating too much meat would cause protein poisoning.

Just exactly what is this condition?

If you *only* eat meat or get like, 99% of your calories of meat, you can get sick from lack of nutrition. It mostly refers to wild meats, which are low in fats. Rabbit meat is the biggest example. Nothing to Rabbit but protein really.

So whats really happening is lack of vitamins, minerals, carbs, and fats.

It takes a long time to get there and you literally have to be eating almost exclusively lean meats. The average person never has to worry about it because we eat lots of other things, like carbs, veggies, and fats.

So don't worry about it. But the simple answer is: Your body doesn't get the correct amount of nutrients for survival.

I'm not sure about "poisoning" as such, but high levels of protein cause the body to become more acidic, causing bone decay (and, ironically, causing kidney stones). Leafy greens are alkaline, so they should also be consumed on a high-protein diet to balance the pH.

When fur traders were in the wilderness, hunting rabbits. they would often starve. despite the constant supply of rabbit meat.

Why?

because they didn't eat vegetables or anything else. the body uses vitamins to metabolize and digest proteins, when you aren't replacing them, you die.
you get those vitamins from vegetables, fruits, plants, roots, etc.

but one would say ah but the Inuit eat just meat all the time, why aren't they dead?

well it's because they eat the entire animal, as well as raw. raw livers of animals, especially belugas contain vitamin c. this is just one example. but they get all their vitamins through consuming raw organs of animals. they also have the genetics to do this. i wouldn't suggest trying it.

no, not fat. its all protein, no essential viatmins, fibre, or carbohydrates.

all of the fat is of a specific kind as well, which leads to an imbalance

It's called Rabbit Starvation.
You misunderstood.
You get this if you eat meat without any fat on it. Look it up on wiki.

*sigh* also, the actual protein poisoning happens when you consume too much protein that your body doesn't use. It tries to filter through the liver and kidneys and causes them to become toxic.
