I find martial arts/combat sports to be extraordinarily effective. Getting your ass handed to you a couple of times by someone who can fight circles around you will humble you up pretty quickly. Fighting in controlled situations will allow you to keep a cooler head in stressful situations. Learning that there are people who can rip you a new one in ways you've never imagined will encourage you to not pick fights. Knowing that, if need be, you can kick a little ass yourself, will free you from having to actually do so.
Yes, my friend, you can become a less violent person by dedicating yourself to (controlled) violence.
