You can do interval training on a treadmill, but not HIIT. The point is to run like you're being chased by a wild animal then very abruptly switch to jogging, and vice versa. Something like 8 secs sprint, 12 secs jog. 5 mins of real HIIT and you'll want to puke if you're not fit. Treadmills don't change speed fast enough, and don't go fast enough at the top end.
Bike is okay, eliptical is iffy, seems like they're not built for going all out.
