what is /fit/'s opinion on protein supplements? any personal experience with it's effectiveness at building muscles?

I find myself having no option but to use it due to the fact of well not lack-of but unable to find the protein I need to workout. For me its the only real option due to small stomach etc

Protein powders are a must for any sound diet. Especially if you are training to gain mass/strength/lose fat/agility training/athletic training. The simple fact is that people do not get enough protein and it is very hard to get all your protein in. For muscle gains its recommended you take 2xbodyweight in grams of protein a day for men and 1-1.5x for women. That is a lot of protein and to get that in I would have to eat 6-7 steaks. I supplement 3/6 of my meals with a protein powder. I prefer trueprotein.com for their low prices

Also (I am the above poster) putting on muscle has a lot to do with overall nutrition. If you are not gaining muscle you are not eatting enough calories. I can't tell you how many times I see tiny guys in the gym spending 3 hours working out(never workout for more then an hour) and neglecting their nutrition and praying to get beg...You dont eat you dont grow

If youre not getting enough protein in the diet before from like eggs, meat, cottage cheese etc then you prob need to supplement it. but remember that the body needs a CONSTANT supply throughout the day. so you have to eat some protein every 3-4 hours, so protein shakes don't make you grow more muscle.

I think you meant 1 gram of protein x Lean Body Mass in lbs, or 2.2 grams x LBM in kgs.
