Is marching band good exercise? 3-5 times a week for 2-4 hours.
Pic somewhat related.

Well..... I'd say it's great for maintaining the body you have right now. There are fit people, and then there are fat fucks. Really, in my four years of HS marching band, the people in my band barely change.

But it depends on how hardcore bands march - there are many hardcore military-style marching bands in the South, who march by bringing their knees up to their chest at 150+ bpm tempos. crazy shit, though bands in my state and other northern states aren't as crazy.

Yeah, we don't do much highstepping. Only for dramatic effect. And as a percussionist, I don't have to worry about it. I would think that 10+ hours a week of marching, etc mixed with a healthy diet would produce some results. But yeah, I know what you mean about people not changing. A friend of mine was in band from 8th grade to his senior year and he was fat the entire time haha.

Lot of running and breathing involved. I had pretty good lung capacity at the end of four years. Heavy lifting too if you play a badass instrument and not some lame ass small instrument.

3-5 times a week for 2-4 hours? Your band must be lazy. We had two hours in the morning, Monday to Friday. 3 - 8 in the evening on Tuesday and Thursday. 9 - 8 on Saturdays.

Haha, wow.
We have full band twice a week for 3 hours, sectionals once for 3 hours, football games on fridays, and competitions on Saturdays.

Well, now that I think about it, my band was staffed by former members of drumlines like Blue Devils and so on. They worked us pretty hard, but it showed. I lost a lot of weight towards the end of my senior year when I started putting in the effort and actually eating right.

I lost quite a bit of weight when I started marching in high school, so I would say yes but it really depends on how hard your show is physically.

Uphill? In the snow? With rabid squirrels chasing you?

Band is good cardio, but if you're not eating right and lifting I don't think it will do much other than maintain. That said, the percussionists tended to be in better shape than the rest of us in mine, but they practiced more than we did.
