I was about 330 a couple months ago and have since lost 35 pounds, and am not stopping. I believe you are on the right track. Hell, when you're as fat as we are a brisk walk will get your heart rate going just fine.
In my research I've found that you should just not bother with counting out every calorie. Just learn to recognize when you're really hungry--not when you want food, but when you actually need it--and then eat a moderate amount of something healthy. You could eat 2500 calories worth of chocolate cake every day and get nowhere, but if you just make sure you're sticking to fruits, vegetables, lean meats, etc., and not overeating just because you're used to it, then you'll get the job done.
