Microwaves are bad. Anonymous
For a while now, I've been suspicious of my microwave after noticing that when I 'nuked' water and put a tea bag in it, I would get foam at the top, where as naturally heated water + teabag had no such effect.

I started thinking, maybe the activity of each individual molecule is different after being microwaved instead of conventionally heated

I theorized that if we consume water that has adverse effects on tea leaves, and our bodies are 98% water, what effect does the water have on our bodies? Our cellular tissue?

I did some research and found that microwaves do actually destroy tons of nutrients in the food it heats, which is so fucking obvious; you get cancer if you microwave your hand for a reason.

Thoughts? Is this new or old news to /fit/?
I personally now use the microwave sparingly.
>> Anonymous
>>400515
microwaves continue to heat food for an extended period after you remove it, hence the water was still getting hotter as you removed it
>> Anonymous
well good thing we aren't fucking stupid enough to put our hand into a microwave and get cancer. Microwaves just work by vibrating the molecules. Imagine molecular vibrates going up to each individual molecule and vibrating them and making it heat up. Ya that's how it works

yeah I know how they work, but there principles are based on things completely different from natural conventional heat.

>> Anonymous

Prolonged expusure to radiation also causes cancer, hence skin cancer is caused by exposure to the suns radiation, protip: light is a form of radiation

Microwaves and radiation are very much alike; radiation gives off Micro Waves, Microwaves "make microscopic particles 'wave'", move around, heat up, etc.

Conservation of energy begs to differ, bro.

The food does continue to conduct/radiate heat energy after it leaves the microwave, but it does that 24/7 anyway.

I know it seems to everyone like the microwave is a simple heating unit, but the actual physics behind it and the research done on them will definately change your mind.

You have to actually read into it first, try a document that isn't swayed by the companies who either make, sell, or distribute microwaves, or such as the same for foods that are based on microwaves.

Liquids, when heated in a microwave oven in a container with a smooth surface, can superheat; that is, reach temperatures that are a few degrees in temperature above their normal boiling point, without actually boiling. The boiling process can start explosively when the liquid is disturbed, such as when the operator takes hold of the container to remove it from the oven or while adding impurities such as powdered creamer or sugar, and can then result in a violent burst of water and vapor resulting in liquid and steam burns. A common myth states that only distilled water can exhibit this behaviour but this is not true.[14]

Your water was superheated, disturbing it with a teabag caused it to boil a bit.

Nutrients? Again, go to the wikipedia article. In some cases, microwaves are better for retaining nutrients. It is also better for reducing carcinogens in some cases as well (eg. heating up bacon is better in a microwave)

"Spinach retains nearly all its folate when cooked in a microwave.[8] In comparison, it loses about 77 percent when cooked on a stove because food on a stove is typically boiled, leaching out nutrients.[8] Steamed vegetables tend to maintain more nutrients when cooked on a stovetop than in a microwave.

You have no idea what the word 'Retain' means do you?
When you boil spinach, the nutrients leave the spinach and disperse into the water, this doesn't say anything about how well maintained the nutrients are after being microwaved, just that they haven't dispered out of the spinach itself.

Nutritional effects of microwave cooking
Lassen, A | Ovesen, L
Nutrition & Food Science [NUTR. FOOD SCI.]. no. 4, pp. 8-10. 1995.
Several studies have shown that microwave cooking, if properly used, does not change the nutrient content of foods to a larger extent than conventional heating. In fact, suggests that there is a tendency towards greater retention of many micronutrients with microwaving, probably due to the shorter preparation time. Does not describe non-thermal effects. The main problem with microwaving is the uneven heating of the food, which has raised concern regarding microbiological safety. Microwaving infant formula and breast milk has become increasingly popular. The content of nutrients and antibacterial factors in milk are maintained unchanged provided the final temperature does not exceed 60 degree C.

Seriously. What a douche.

All forms of cooking destroy nutrients in many foods. Different forms of cooking destroy different nutrients in different foods.

The important thing here.... Is that food cooked in a microwave almost always tastes like shit. So stop being a dumbass and learn to cook real food and then you won't have to worry about your irrational fear of the microwave.

>When you boil spinach, the nutrients leave the spinach and disperse into the water, this doesn't say anything about how well maintained the nutrients are after being microwaved, just that they haven't dispersed out of the spinach itself.

I'll try my best to dumb it down for you.
When you boil vegetables in water, the nutrients escape the vegetables, they Leave the vegetable, they are gone, they go into the water they're being boiled in.
when you microwave vegetables, they Keep the nutrients, because there is no where for the nutrients to go, it has to stay inside of the vegetable, there is no water surrounding the vegetable for the nutrients to go.

What both equations leave out, is the fact that when you microwave the nutrients, it breaks the nutrients down through radiation and sparatic molecular movement, making the nutrient either useless or less usable for your body to build into whatever system that nutrient is vital to.

I don't averagely make tea with the microwave, I have one of those filtered water dispensers with the heated water spout included. It was the few times that I’d wanted tea and my water cooler hadn’t been refilled that I decided to microwave a cup of water and throw a tea-bag in it for one person, why not? Heating things up quickly is what they’re there for.

sheep is for anyone who hasn't read up on what they're digesting. The fact that you could spend an entire day and not find a single resource that states that microwaves don't change the structure of nutrients, and still go and microwave something, and eat it, because Everyone else does. That's ‘sheep’.
try not to be a pretentious faggot with the term ‘sheep’.

second, the term “Life field” was used in one study by an entirely separate examination from the other studies. The validity of those other studies shouldn't be effected, logical, right? you probably won’t read on any farther into the study, all hell would break loose if something changed your mind about something with logic and science.

Not questioning what the physical implications microwaves have on nutrients just because 90% of americans have on in there home is like not questioning the validity of what the television says because.. once again, 90%+ of america's population own one.
hey wait that kind of reminds me of a term used to describe unquestioning thoughtless people who fit into those characteristics, hmm what was it again..

You think they microwave the spinach and then see, oh look it weighs the same and looks the same, nothing leaked. It must have retained all of the nutrients.

Of course the nutrient will still be 'detected', but that doesn't mean it will be as usable as it was before it was microwaved. now that it has been changed [Not Destroyed], it will no longer be as proficient as it would have been prior to being microwaved.

I hate retards.

"In studies at Cornell University, scientists looked at the effects of cooking on water-soluble vitamins in vegetables and found that spinach retained nearly all its folate when cooked in a microwave, but lost about 77 percent when cooked on a stove. They also found that bacon cooked by microwave has significantly lower levels of cancer-causing nitrosamines than conventionally cooked bacon.

When it comes to vegetables, adding water can greatly accelerate the loss of nutrients. One study published in The Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture in 2003 found that broccoli cooked by microwave — and immersed in water — loses about 74 percent to 97 percent of its antioxidants. When steamed or cooked without water, the broccoli retained most of its nutrients."

BUT if you really want me to "school you" (literally) I will. I'm a university student, I've taken chemistry courses. They can use different techniques to identify nutrients.
