You can do it at home, just find a clean space big enough for you to move freely.
But, IMO you should try to get in a class. It's more fun when you do it with other people, the instructor can correct your position when you do it wrong and if you pay in advance it forces you to keep practicing it.
Yoga is awesome, I'm doing Hatha; my flexibility has improved greatly and I no longer have trouble breathing.
Give yourself time, remember that it's not a contest and try to enjoy it.
