I've got two questions about lifting.

1. I'm doing 8x3 for all of my lifting routines. When trying to increase weights I sometimes can't get to 8 reps for my last set. Would it be better for me to decrease the weight a little and do 8 or suck it up and squeeze out whatever I can, even if it's only 4-6?

2. I've been going to the gym for about a year and a half now, but... but... I've never used the squat rack. I'm not completely sure how to use it and looks pretty intimidating. However I do martial arts and we do tons of unweighted squats and squats with medicine balls. Do I need to do more SQUATZ?

1) If you're going to mass and not functional strength then do what you're doing with 3x8 and just stack weight. Stack weight. Drop reps to 6 and. Stack. Weight.

2) Of course you need to squat. The big magic 3 are squats-bench press-dead lift. BTW your martial arts isn't a work out. Unless you do at least 30mins of drills you'd be better off just running after the class.

Ok, thank you.

I'm doing rotary chest press, which is basically a bench press. I don't know why, but I just don't have the motivation to squat or deadlift.

It's an hour long class, so yeah.

The difference between doing barbells/dumbbells is your body uses contractor muscles to maintain the movement of the weight that you're pushing/pulling/lifting etc. Doing Squats on a Smith Machine or Benching on a Chest Press machine takes away the strain and you're going to suffer for it later.

Do you bring in your own music to the gym? Most gyms play easy listening shit or no music at all. You are going to need to get enthused if you ever hope to build anything lasting. Find that motivation to do the hard exercises and the rest will come easily.

-one more thing- Shy away from the machines if you have the option to push dumbbells/barbells.

1. If you can't complete the full 8x3 then you are not ready for higher weights. Simple as that.

Most people don't realize that the psychological effect of skipping a phase with any workout routine, will inevitably cause you to skip over other disciplines. It is a slippery slope ending in a poorly utilized workout.

2. The answer is simple.
