I know this question has been asked before, but what's a good acne cure? I've tried lots of things, like Clearasil and benzoyl peroxide. I've been doing the regime at acne.org for a long time, and it's helped a bit but not cleared it up completely. I think I need to try something more drastic, like medication. But does medication work? I'm dubious. What do you think?

Accutane.

The side effects get a little intense towards the end of the six months, but it's more than worth it. I did one 6 month cycle that ended around March 2007, but my acne came back really bad so I had to do it again with an increased dosage. I finished around January (I had to stop a month early, my skin was getting severely dry) and only have a few pimples to deal with every once in a while.

The dermatologist described it as the closest thing to a cure for acne, which I completely agree with. I had been on doxycillin, amoxycillin, and a few other medicated and over the counter drugs. None of which I was happy with. Accutane WILL make your acne worse for the first month, but that's only because your skin will be irritated by being dry at first and all the dead skin will start clogging your pores. But after that each month you should notice much clearer skin.

It's a pain in the dick to get though, tons of red tape. The only side effect I noticed was dry skin (I got very mild eczema while on it), lips, nose, and eyes. However due to the claims that it can cause depression, you have to go through your dermatologist and sign up with IPledge (at your derm's office).

If you're going to do it, get some chap stick called "Dr. Dans's cortibalm". Google it and order it online. Trust me, normal chap stick won't cut it once your getting past month 4.

accutane is definitely the closest thing to a cure, although like>>378202said, so much clerical bullshit to go through - then the side effects if you get them.

if your acne is strong enough, then do your best to just get them to prescribe this to you. otherwise you have to clear your skin the hard way: retin-a

i'm pretty much clear, i have a few blackheads left that will eventually come out. retin-a is basically topical (gel) accutane. it just takes FOREVER for the skin to *start* clearing, at least 5 months. then i have to stay on this forever, which i don't care about as long as my skin becomes perfect.

also: acne.org and acne.org/messageboard
also: AHA (glycolic acid) from acne.org
also: lots of eucerin redness relief, because both retin-a or accutane will dry you the fuck out.

I've heard that accutane only lasts 2 years. Is that true, or is it a lifelong 'cure'?
Either way, I guess it doesn't really matter since 6 months of hell is worth the 2 years of heaven, but it'd be nice to know

Oral antibiotics, a complete avoidance of all foods/drinks containing caffeine. Stop drinking milk!
Clears up within 6 weeks.

Med school dude here. Benzoyl peroxide will with a high level of evidence cure any non-infectioust acne, but that can take as long as a year of constant use, so most people don't go through with the regimen. If you have an infection, ie. much pus, you need antibiotics in addition, see your doc. Accutane is for very serious cases only, like your pic, because it can have really bad side effects.

I've found Aloe Vera soaps/gels applied to the skin with a little bit of water and patted dry work very well. But it may be only for me. Still something to consider, though.

"One can also use aloe Vera in the liquid form and apply it to the affected area with the cotton. Then that area should be cleaned by using mild aloe Vera soap. After that, aloe Vera cream should be used on the acne. Regularly using aloe Vera products can make the skin acne free and soft. The properties of aloe Vera help in decreasing redness and swelling and protect forming of acne in the future." Longer version.
