Hey /fit/,

I've been playing with an idea in my head and I want to know if you think it's possible. I've recently become obsessed with being able to put out one horsepower of energy output on an elliptical. My goal is to be able to sustain this for a full minute.

Now, the reason I think that I can even accomplish such a feat is that according to wikipedia and google, 1hp = 746 watts. The ellipticals at my gym can measure wattage output and, for a normal workout, I output an average of about 290 watts. When I'm doing HIIT, my high-intensity intervals can hit up to about 610 watts. So, the way I see it, if I can work out even harder during the high-intensity intervals and bring it up to 750 watts, would I effectively be accomplishing this task? Also, is this an accomplishment or is it easier to do than I think it is?

Or am I overlooking something completely obvious?

yur not a horse

Try doing it on a bike with gears first, it doesn't make sense to do that on an elliptical.

Why not?

My elliptical measures wattage as well, and I usually hit about 550. Even at that, I'm about to shake the fucker to pieces, so I'm not sure that the machine could regularly handle that intensity.

Other than that, there's no harm in trying to improve. If having the output of a horse on the elliptical gets your revs on, then go for it.

you won't be able to apply your force very efficiently, and I'm assuming you're basically spazzing out when you're at 610 watts on the elliptical. If you're on a bike you can just gear up and push harder instead of spinning like a maniac.

Not spazzing out, hovering at around 100-110 rpm at a relative resistance level of 15. My problem with a bike is that the resistance just doesn't seem to go high enough to bring my wattage over even 450.

I'll try to give both a try, though I'm not sure I'm fit enough to pull it off for as long as I want.

OP here. Update for those who care.

Haha, I didn't even come close. I managed to get the elliptical to a max of 830 watts, but couldn't keep it over 746 for more than 17 seconds. Was an interesting 17 seconds though.

One day I'll keep it there for a minute. However, it doesn't seem like today is that day. Maybe by the end of the summer?

track cyclists in sprint events can put out over 2000 watts at their peak, so i'm sure this goal will ultimately be attainable.

my question:

why not just try to get good at something that someone cares about?

Fuck man, that's a good damn question. Presumably cause it's the summer, I have a full time job, I'm out of school, and I find that I have too much free time on my hands.
