I'm a nerd, not much of a fighter. I do heavy squats, but i have bad kinesethic senses and bad reflexes.

I'd like react faster and be able to nail down to the floor your average night club asshole with a 100 inch chest with a swift knee strike to the solar plexus.

I also want to know wich martial art would fit my particular needs (being able to defend myself against hormone-raging pricks).
I'd like to be confident during a fight, know where to strike, proper strance, proper distance, etc.

Krav Maga, Kali

Especially Krav Maga because it's no BS "martial art sport". It doesn't have any 'rules' etc... Just about incapacitating ur opponent(s).

I've been doing kung fu for about 2 months now. It's pretty bad ass. We've learned some good self defense techniques on top of the normal sparring drills and kata's. I also did tae kwon do for a couple of years when i was younger. There is some good stuff there too. I would recommend kung fu though. After a bit of time you learn the original strengthening exercises that were taught to the monks. These exercises are what gives those 120lbs asains the ability to punch and kick with the power that they do.

Krav maga is a big fat overhyped piece of shit
because retards discovered that they teach it in the special ops or whatever the fuck, while it's just a combination of basic hand movements to disarm the opponent.

if you're attacked by more than one person lethal force is legal.

its not just "basic hand movements" there are basic hand movements, but thats not strictly all it is, dumbshit. perhaps if you attended a class more than once you'd learn more than just how to move your hands.

how to floor someone without hurting them at all, why biting someone's ear off is a good idea, how to escape/evade grapples and locks, and of course, how to break people limbs, and how to throw a punch without breaking your fingers.
>> Anonymous
Muay Thai if you actually want to be throwing knees/elbows, but against your average meathead jock, many of which have done wrestling, they'll be able to overpower you on standing and on the floor. And staying standing against someone much bigger than you is tricky (because if he/she/it just rushes you, throws can be difficult just because it's hard to wrap your arms around 'em). CSW (Combat Submission Wrestling) and BJJ are the ticket against that kind of fighting.
>> Anonymous
I don't have time for martial arts at the moment but as soon as I do find time, I would go for something like krav maga. I'm interested purely in self-defence, not the sporting aspect of most martial arts. I did taekwondo for many years in the past and stopped just before black belt because I didn't like it anymore. I felt that it wasn't really applicable to real life scenarios. I'm definitely more confident in my abilities than someone with no martial arts training but I stil don't feel completely in control.

>>140483
If you took tae kwon do for many years you'll be fine against the average person. Bar fights aren't like the movies. It's not a bunch of pros. Most people that actually start fights know how to throw a decent punch. If you can block and counter you'll kick their ass. Keep up the tae kwon do, it's useful. You probably won't whip out the spinning crescent kick or anything like that but the basic block punch kick is what's important.
>> Anonymous
>>140490
Taekwondo teaches you basic striking skills. Punches, kicks and such.

This might be sufficient for certain fights but I for one would like to learn more advanced and varied techniques aimed at real combat.

bench dead squat press chin dip. all explosive and speed reps.

do olympic weightlifting, i did it for a 6 months and i felt more whippy and rippy (hard to explain) felt like a rocket engine. i could jump higher and shit.

hit a punching bag.

do a martial art that stresses sparring. i have yet to see a single decent krav maga sparring video. most people that dominate mma/standup come from karate, muay thai, boxing (in regards to striking). these ones are the ones that stress full sparring, no point sparring that most tkd uses.

Elbow strikes are pretty mean. You have to be in close though. Also grabbing and ripping off the genitalia. Or squeezing the genitalia really hard. Target joints. Nobody's joints are immune to damage. Ankles, knees, and hips are the best bets. Trying to hurt the elbow joint can be a little tricky. The clavicle breaks with little pressure, making the arm useless.

OP, don't listen to these TKD fags. TKD teaches you ZERO, I REPEAT, ZERO self defense. They only teach you flashy kicks, zero punching, and no grappling at all. I know this because I have a fucking black belt in TKD, and it was fucking easy to achieve as well.

Striking: obviously boxing is the main choice, followed by kickboxing/muay thai

grappling: judo, wrestling, bjj, sambo,... any of these are MORE THAN sufficient when fighting against some street thug.
IMO it'd be better to be a good wrestler/judoka if you get in a streetfight, as they teach very good pins and focus on keeping control of your opponent (In judo competitions, one way of winning is by pinning for 25 seconds). Correct me if I'm wrong, but BJJers seem to go straight for the submission instead of controlling the opponent, and that's fine if you can get a choke, but I wouldn't want to be breaking any bones and facing the legalities unless it's "life or death".
>> Anonymous
Please, taekwondofags, enlighten me on your hand strikes. Maybe I'll just watch a few taekwondo matches on youtube to see th-....oh wait, you don't punch in competition, or sparring..
>> Anonymous
Ok, I'm assuming by now OP's put in a few years proper TKD, next step:

Punch the throat rather than the face. It's not as small a target as the eyes, and hurts a lot.

Shout a lot. Shouting is fun, and helps psych yourself up.

Don't go out of your way to make any stances, they're just drills you make sure you attack right. You might end up in a stance while doing something if it's the best position for the job, but if you go out of your way to pull out a stance, you're doing it wrong.

Aikido or Aikijutsu
To a lesser extent, Judo and Jiujutsu
You will learn to redirect the kinetic energy of your opponent, ground techniques, and grappling. Your size will not matter, and you will be able to hone your reflexes to anticipate and intercept oncomming attacks.
Hopefully, you will never seriously injury anything other than your aggressor's pride.

Don't they pretty much just hurt you? I mean, I've never seen anyone get tripped over and then just say "oh, fair enough, I just wanted to test your martial arts skills, and not to fight properly at all, I'll let you go. Well done."

Presumably you plan to end a confrontation with a phrase like "Your kung fu is weak. You need more training to defe-CRACK Owwww I'm sorry."

Honestly, you can't just expect your kinetic energy directing skills to keep you 100% safe, you'd better just beat them up.

God you stupid fags, you say elbowing the fuck out of a person won't do anything nor hurting their fucking dick and balls will do anything nor breaking their clavicle or joints. This aint seagal shit, this is what is taught to anyone serious about defending themselves, militaries all around the world have successfully used this stuff throughout history, it's fucking proven you dipshits. It's not about it not working, you retarded piece of shit, it's about how in a real fucking street fight, what with the flailing limbs, the adrenaline pumping through you, and various levels of drunki/druggitude in your opponent, it's not very likely that you'll ever get a chance to pull out the "Axe-Hand Eagle Strike" to your opponents fucking _clavicle_.

Sure, the military, martial arts masters, and whatnot might do that shit, but most of us don't belong to those proud few.

There is no referee saying this is legal or illegal, there'll be a jury of your peers, and if you cripple someone, and they decide you didn't need to do that to _protect your life_ then you will be charged with a crime.
There are a lot of factors that go into this, including the individuals of the jury, the specifics of the incident, and how purty the lawyers talk.
But above all, and there's legal precedent behind this, if you are in some way accredited as knowing a martial art, there's a legal assumption that you had a higher degree of control over the situation than an opponent without similar training.
In at least one court record, it was stated as being similar to having a knife when your opponent doesn't have one. Typically, unless you can prove they were just a crazy fucker and you _had_ to cut them/ dislocate their shoulder / break their balls/ whatever, you are guilty of a crime.

Also, ITT, every single school that says they teach a given martial art is the same apparently?
Krav maga is the shit. If you find the right school, you're learning the real shit, with some degree of self-control, and using the right amount of force in the right situation.
The Vale Tudo stuff is also useful in non-lethal confrontations.

Many good traditional schools will teach you confidence. Having that strength, balance, and technique in your pocket means that it's easier to walk away from a fight, because you're not interested in dick waving anymore.
