I found the pad unessicary once I learned to position for the bar on my back. I was at first doing it wrong and placing the bar high so it rested on my spine.

Now I know better, I leave it about an inch above my shoulder joints on the pad of my tap's muscle. I can squat big weights with no pain, or meaningful discomfort. Sure the spot is a bit sore, whatever, its nothing compared to the burning and quivering in my legs from a good set of squats.

I normally do work sets in the area of 3x10 of 275. I'm not focusing on gaining too much strength, but rather using squats to help lose some body fat as part of a total body work out.

So then, knowing my body and what I'm capable of, decided to go a bit heavier than normal at 315. I'm comfortable squatting 225 with very little warmup, then moving right to 275 and going from there.

In the 4 years I've been lifting regularly, I've always approached lifting with the same attention to warm up as I do now, and have never had a muscle injury (knock on wood), nor do I feel I've retarded (tee-hee) any gains.

It's not like I can only do 145 and then just tried to jump up to some high weight. I went from a high weight and did an entirely different kind of exercise (fast reps, low weight), then just returned to the high weight.

i think the older you get the more warming up you might have to do. i'm mid twenties and i squat the bar 2x10, then 95 2x8, then 135 1x8, then 315 3x6 for my workout. my warmup goes by really quick with a couple of stretches in between. was watching rippetoe and for shoulder press he warmed up for like 20 mins lifting before hand.so age is probably a factor.
