Hey /fit/

My doctor convinced me to start jogging a few weeks ago. I'm not overweight but I just sit for my job and sit at home. I'm 6'4" and 25 lbs. Anyways I'm doing this to strengthen my heart and be fit.

The question I have is I've been jogging for 30 mins a day for 3 weeks straight. I go at a medium pace and maybe sprint for 20 secs every 10 mins. So I was wondering at what interval should I incrase the amount of excercise? Should I raise the amount per day to 35-40 mins? Add a few mins every couple of weeks?

Also what is a good pattern? How often and for how long should I sprint? I think my method is random and a bit dumb.. idk.

Thanks :)

Increase the distance/time whenever you feel like it.

running EVERY DAY is bad for your body... give yourself atleast two days to rest.

3/4ths of year ago, I barely ran at all... I slowly got into into... two miles a day, every weekday (MTWRF)...

When I wanted to up my speed/stamina I began to use a tredmill.. Started with 2 miles on 6.5 MPH, the next week I did 3 miles on 6.5, the next 3 miles at 7MPH, the next 4 miles at 7 MPH. Now I've been running 5 miles at 7.6 MPH... for half a year. It takes 40 minutes.

When it comes to running, all you have to do is make sure you FEEL like you're pushing yourself, and you'll get better...

Also, make sure you have some NICE running shoes.. I use Asics.. DO NOT BUY CHEAP ONES.

Oops, forgot to say I'm running those 5 miles every weekday, with weekends free... if stuff starts to hurt out of the ordinary during the middle of the week, I use a crosstrainer for a day or two.

I think you are overweight.

I run every day. In under 4 months, I was covering 3 miles daily at 12 mph.

Then I trained for a marathon, running every day more and more. Ran the thing in three hours.

You won't have any knees by age 60 if you keep going like that. :/

I'm also a distance runner. Speed is fun, but I like to go farrrrrrrrrrrr...

That depends entirely upon form. If you have poor form and your knees take a pounding, they will break down prematurely. If you have excellent form, running will actually help your knees stay in good condition in the long run. Developing proper form isn't something most people take the time to do, though, which is unfortunate.

Form is a mojor part, yes.. but it's GOOD to let your body rest for a day or two of the week...

You NEVER pull anything when you run?

I rarely see doctors advise jogging to patients nowadays, as very few can maintain the motivation for an otherwise tedious and uneventful activity.

I usually recommend taking a martial arts class or taking up swimming or yoga.

Injuries come and go, and I agree that rest is important. If you're actually training for something, though, a 20 minute run and some stretching is better than taking a day off entirely.

Oh, def. When you're training, yeah.

I'm finishing my residency this year.

No sir I do not. On top of it, I never stretch beforehand or after running either, no joke. No injuries so far except a stretch of like a week when I got charlie horses every night. But before and after that up to present, I'm good to go, and my legs are rock hard.

the way i run to train for wrestling, #2 in my state in 189 pound weight class this season :), is to jog in my neighborhood for 3 miles everyday. the way that i toss in sprints is i jog the distance from on mailbox to the next mailbox on the right side of the street, and then when i hit that mailbox i sprint from it to the next one on the street. I alternate doing that for the first 2 miles of the 3 mile run, and then i just jog the final mile, but finish with a sprint down my street and driveway into my house. That running regimen got me in shape fast. I got the idea for it from my uncle whos in the army, because thats how he runs to stay in shape.

but i dont know if that is actually a healthy way to run, because when i first started it i would be to sore to move and climb the stairs in my house until about 2 weeks into it. I started running like this 2 years ago though. do it 1 time a day monday through friday. Then i take the weekend off for rest.

When I first started, I was sore the same way... but I heard from "somewhere" that running when sore was the best time to run. So I forced myself to do it, particularly because I was dead-set on losing weight fast. As I lost weight, my legs were relatively stronger than they needed to be because they had had to carry more weight while running/walking in the past, so maybe that has something to do with it which carries on to the present day.
