workouts before breakfast, anons y/n? RSI guy !HjbWRiSTJ.
ok fit,

i got suddenly lightheaded and weak during weight-lifting workout today, i had to stop immediately and eat or i would've collapsed. it fucked up my routine, my friend and I had to bail early. it's like all my energy just suddenly evaporated, during some set of something. something i do normally for over a dozen times.

I last ate 12 hours earlier. I suppose that's it. I just wanted to workout right away this morning, then eat, like I heard pros do, but I can't. why not?

wtf is wrong with me. I know it's the low energy from lack of eating, but don't know why... help me workout like pros, right away in the morning then eating a big meal.

stats: 5'6", 140lbs, eat nutritiously (only ~3 a day sadly now), do snatches db ~40lbs 3x10, do various other shit in gym. no cardio though, i just walk fast continuously for 6 hours a day at my retail job, and cycle fast 30 minutes a day.

eat before your workout.
Don't work out so early.
Your body is weak in the morning, don't fight your bio-rythm.
I work out when I'm strongest, late afternoon or evening.

i can't. hmm. that can be where the problem is, let my imagination run ahead of me. one guy who was my trainer, says he works out then eats, and he's all buff and nutritious so i treat his word as gospel. but i just can't workout so early without eating.

i dunno how he does it. for now i say magic.

don't eat a full meal before working out. grab an apple, banana, etc. then work out, then full meal. You have to let the body know that this a small sampling, and there is a full meal coming shortly so it doesn't make you crash and burn

Always eat before doing any form of weight training. The only exercise you should fast for beforehand is cardio (it forces your body to draw on any fat sources it has).

I made that mistake when I first started working out. Couldn't finish the last part of the workout as a result.

when I first wake up, I get out of bed, and grab some sort of small snack, usually a banana, then I work out, then get ready for work, eat then drive to work.

As for your actual question, you SHOULD eat before hand. Then during, then after.

Except during should be sipping on a quick digesting protein shake (whey protein isolate, for instance)

Like, what exactly, and how much? The more protein consumed before working out should bear directly on the time have to wait until can work out. A little, a lot? Fish, beef?

ah, good, yes. i'd like to explore this comment in more detail.

the idea of eating a banana and/or an apple before working out appeals to me. makes sense as far my understanding is it's quick-release energy. save the meat proteins for after, they're both slow digestion as well as slow energy release. could take way too many hours, would set me back lots.

the most rapidly absorbed and bio-available protein in the world is whey protein. consume this in a formulated workout drink during your gym session. this will limit catabolisis. you can google work out drink and find delightful, cheap home-made recipes. i think i have told you this before.

you can have these drinks before and after as well but it gets expensive.

it works something like this: you put maltodextrin and/or dextrose sources into these drinks. these are the most rapidly absorbed carbohydrates there are. these create an insulin spike, meaning that the body secretes insulin to mop-up excess blood-sugar. while exercising this should cause the carbohydrates to be plowed into the musle as glycogen, ready to use by your body for energy, decreasing fatigue and recovery time by fucking catabolisis up the ass. and this is why you use whey, because it get's rapidly assimilated to help keep the muscle up and going. yay.

insulin sensitivity is a big thing though. fatties might not get the same effect. so make sure your regular diet is in order. this will help you gain mass and recover faster, but will not aid weight loss.

meat and vegetables will do fine, but what we are talking about here is optimisation. in everything there are levels, and it can be as detailed as you want it to be. how dedicated are you feeling today?

cheap trick, use natural yoghurt post workout. lactose gives a big insulin spike to replace glycogen and it's full of whey and casein. also cheaper than a lot of powders.

fruit are quick energy. i will often eat them before a workout. they are a natural source of accessible energy and although fructose will not cause a big insulin spike it is still ready to use in short-enough order to be useful. more so than potatoes for example, and notice i said 'natural'. ultra-pure carbohydrates haven't always been available.

there are people who can give better quality detail than i. doing your own research pays off big.
