I'd bet you have either a damaged ligament, a subluxed patella, or bursitis. You'll need x-rays and an MRI to determine what's wrong. Honestly, I'd think it's likely just bursitis (which is solved very easily) if you don't know of any initial trauma.
I had a sublixed patella and bursitis that I walked on for 10 months before getting an MRI, ended up having lateral release and debridement surgery. The surgery was 2 years ago and the injury was nearly 3 years ago. Just for the last month or so - the time that I've been working out really hard - has it finally stopped hurting. Lesson: Don't push too hard until you know what's wrong, and then once your doc (preferrably an osteopath) tells you what's up follow his advice and DON'T STOP PHYSICAL THERAPY. That last part is the only thing I left out and walked with a cane for months. Trust me, the looks you get being a tattooed 25 year old limping on a cane are no fun.
