So /fit/, I've been trying to eat healthier, oats etc.

In the morning I've been adding flax seeds to my oats and the like, and just now I've noticed that I'm crapping out whole flax seeds. Is this usual? Should I be grinding them up? It's only a few, nowhere near the amount I've been eating, but still seems curious.

Is it worth it just to go pre-ground? I like how cheap they are now.

i got some ground flaxseeds

pretty damn good and some omega-3 to boot, but i take fish oil for that anyways

Your body cant process whole flax seeds, so yes they need to be ground, no shell. If you eat them whole, you are wasting them. You either need to grind them oor buy them pre-ground, otherwise you get no benefit from them.

Fucking hell, we have evolved to be able to grind with our teeth! Those big ones at the back? They're for grinding. Pity we seem to have forgotten that.

In b4 bullshit.

nutritional value disappears faster when the ground bits are exposed to air sitting on the shelf. The freshest would be a grind it yourself. But if they just grounded recently, I would go for it. however I'm not sure how big a difference it is. a short time may still be a lot, I don't know.
