Casual grip-building Scandalion
Hey, brand new to /fit/, but this thread>>288900got me wondering about using these. (pic related).

I've been using these to try and build up some grip strength and maybe a little definition in my forearm muscles, absentmindedly switching from hand to hand and pointing up or down while at work (on a phone headset, so lots of hands-free time), just a few reps at a time, squeezing them closed slowly and then back open.

Sometimes my knuckles hurt after doing it for a while, which makes me wonder if it's just my body getting used to this new exercise, or if I'm damaging that joint in some way.

you need to get harder stuff. You should be fucking struggling or you are wasting your time.

Consider doing deadlifts. They're much more balanced and they'll help your grip strength.

Hard to do deadlifts in an office.

Fair enough. In that case look into those Captains of Crush handgrippers or something.

Get some good grippers like Captains of Crush or Heavygrips.

>>I can tell it's not a total waste, because I've already seen some slight increase in muscle definition (not that there was much to begin with), and my grip strength and endurance has improved.

You're being a pussy, just in a different way than your question referred to. 20 reps is very high, some might say uselessly high. Obviously your muscles are going to look more defined right after you use them.

tl;dr post your cock.

Heh heh, I appreciate the honesty.

I'll look into getting better grippers. I should mention, though, that the definition is lasting, not just post-workout pump.

I like the cut of your jib, so to speak. Since you handled it well, I'll let you know that I was trolling to a certain extent. But the important part, the reps is true. If your forearms are the same as any other muscle group then you're going to want to shoot for 8-12 reps; personally I find 8 to be the magical number. 3 sets is a good number though.

Side note, If you're doing a lot more than 3 sets of 8 reps then you'll probably just end up overworking your forearms. 5 sets is probably the most you'll want to go for, beyond that you're only burning minuscule amounts of calories and hurting your gains.
