biking is awesome. minimal impact on joints and burns tons of calories. great for fatties with bad knees. i usually go for about 45 mins a day. no need to go super fast, just keep it low gear and keep your heartrate up

getting?

Different muscles, don't know how running compares calorie burning wise though

Bicycles are good, hard cycling is better than running. The human was built to run so they do it fairly efficiently.

Time and speed are dependent on your bike and your conditioning. Start with the minimum recommended time which is 30 minutes, build up to an hour and beyond if you so desire.

>>419047
Agreed, cycling is awesome. When you say low gear you mean low cadence correct? This could lead to knee problems if it goes below 65 rpm.

I don't know what kind of bike you have but if you plan to do any distance riding you would definitely want to invest in some good riding shorts, they make it much more comfortable.

Cycled 70 miles with an average heart rate of 142 and burned an estimated 2533.
Ran 14 miles with an average heart rate of 160 and burned an estimated 1529.

They work different muscles, but if you cross train in both disciplines they will help you in both.

Bicycles are good for cross training or if you're fucking fat and need less stress on your joins/shins.

Been riding my bmx bike since July almost every day. It has basically toned all of my leg. I don't really know about it increasing the strength of my leg since I have a bunch of muscle from hockey. But I would definatly recommend biking. It's fucking easy.

I assumed he meant keep the bike in low gear (meaning high cadence, of course). It may kill your food mileage, but that's the idea.

Is that your Orca? If so, sick bike, how are you liking it? I've been looking at getting a Cinelli. We have one at the shop I work at decked out with Campy Chorus. It's nice.

I assume its over the same amount of time? 2 hours probably?

The Orca is way nice, best bike I've had but then again that's not saying much I've had a Fit Team Trail BMX, then two junker road bikes from craigslist that were nothing but trouble for me. The SRAM Force took a little getting used to, but I think I have that to thank for owning the bike, the shop was just trying to get rid of it because no one was interested. They had it marked down 2300 from their original asking price.
I've had it since July, but I think I need to be fitted to it again because I don't think it's saddle position is right.

>>419590
No, don't have a fair time to compare to.
The run was 2:13:17, the ride was just over four hours.
But as far as burning the 1500 calories, I burn that on my bike going 25 miles at a 18-20mph pace with a heart rate similar to the run 150-165.

That's cool man. How do you like it for climbing? Sexy lateral stiffness? What type of shoes/ pedals are you using. I can't see from the picture. The Cinelli is marked down to 2999$, which is a steal for what it has on it. I need to go in and get an idea of what I would want to do as far as fitment is concerned. I know that I have a fairly long torso for my height, but I'd like to see what the boss would recommend me getting into.

Shoes and pedals are both the cheapest things I could find which consequently means they are MTB equipment. Bike snobs try to give me shit for that, but I bought what I could afford at the time. Next month I should be getting some Speedplay pedals and shoes, no ideas for the shoes yet.

Sadly I am a really weak climber, just because I don't get out there and practice it. Which really is no excuse because I live in a valley and you go 20 miles in any direction and you're faced with some good climbing.

The speedplay's are real nice, good choice. Check out the new Mavic stuff as far as shoes go. Mavic actually bought Adidas' rights to the cycling apparel, so a lot of new stuff is coming out. Apparently their shoes are supposed to be pretty good. Otherwise check out what fits your shoe best. As long as they're comfortable, that's what matters really. ( Unless you're one of those gram saving guys) I wish I was able to bike more, I work full time there, and am exhausted when I come home, and wake up just in time to get to work. The weekends are really crappy too because I usually have so many chores. I need to stop making excuses though, get the bike and start commuting to work when possible. ( Only problem with that is I'd have to bring lunch with me because I only have a 30 minute lunch break) Gah.....

>>419644
I'll definitely check out the Mavic's but yeah with shoes whatever fits and is comfortable I am going with. I was really digging in on a climb a few weeks back and hurt the ball of my foot on the cleat, so yeah anything with a thick pad will probably be preferred now just to avoid a similar situation.

As far as finding time, you have to make sacrifices and decide what's most important. I've been keeping a ridiculous schedule of getting up at 4am so I can work out before daily obligations and going to bed at an even more absurd 7pm. But I'm lucky that it works for me, I understand others aren't that fortunate with their time. Have you tried biking to work? I bike pretty much everywhere I go that's under 50 miles.

Unfortunately no, I'm about to buy another bike. I have a Fuji Absolute 2.0, which has gotten me back into biking, but it's a steaming pile of shit. It was a gift, so there wasn't much I could do about it, but I wish the 400+ bucks had been spent towards a nice road bike. It's insanely heavy. But yeah, I want to start trying to get to bed earlier, and do a decent bike ride every morning. During the summer, before this job I was doing it, and enjoying it a lot. My problem is I just need a lot of time of sleep too, so I would be going to bed right after I get out of work at 7, and waking like you said right at false dawn.

Yeah really, always important. Any ways you keep cycling even on those shitty days when you just don't feel like it? Those little motivational things are always the difference for me between calling it for the day, and getting out there.

grats on the lies, i do hill repeats on my bike and about after 2 years my knees are fucked from it.

Depends on the mental obstacle, usually I will go out regardless. But if I have reason to believe it's from over training I will take a day or two off until I feel strong again.

As corny as the shit is, I use motivational clips on youtube from time to time.
Here are some of my favorites.
