let's talk about workout gloves.
do you use them?
when i lift any sort of weights at the gym, my hands get red and swollen. should i use them or is there something better i could do about this?
>> Anonymous
don't but i would recommend it anyways, my palms are callused as fuck now
>> Anonymous
I use them. Just take them off when running, cause theres no point and the extra sweat will just cause them to smell bad faster.
>> Anonymous
I heard they can be detrimental to forearm strength. Any believers?
>> Anonymous
gloves are pointless.
Work on your grip strength instead.
If you get callouses you do it wrong.
Learn proper gripping technique.

How do you spot the noobs in the gym? Yeeees, gloves.
>> Anonymous
I don't, but that's because I like being calloused. The closer my skin is to ARMOR the better.

you will get callouses. deal with it.

>If you get callouses you do it wrong.

I need you to find a cliff. A big one. With sharp rocks at the bottom. And throw yourself off it. Make sure to hit the rocks. Fuckwit. If you get callouses, it just means that you've toughened up your soft faggot hands a bit.

stronglifts and starting strength.
If you get callouses you grip the bar wrong.
There's basically two ways to grip: For pushing (benchpress) and for pulling (deadlift).
For pushing you want to bar close to your wrist.
For pulling close to your fingers (like a hook).
If you get skinfolds between the bar and and your palm, you get callouses.

no, it just means you do it wrong.

Sorry dude, I've been lifting for ages and I got hands like a baby.
Not my fault if you idiots do it wrong.

Thank you, /fit/! Now I finally know what I'm doing wrong.
>> Anonymous
If you use gloves you are a fucking pussy. Man the fuck up and work on your grip. Quit putting lotion on your hands all the time and you won't have to worry about this.
>> Anonymous
>>235664
I do not understand this at all

Welcome to /fit/. Enjoy your stay.
>> Anonymous
>>235720
yeah totally man. i mean what are gloves for anyways? theyre only a definite solution to a problem. reminds me of the time that i was really hungry, and then i ate some food. just gives you a shitty satisfied feeling.
>> Anonymous
>>235721
for pulling think of hanging your hand in the sling the subway.
for pushing think of the barbell resting in hand, pushing against your bones.
>> Anonymous
>>235807
gloves take away direct feeling from the bar. That's a safety problem.
They have no purpose at all.
Ever seen an olympic lifter wear gloves? Guess not and that's for a reason.
>> QQQ 9.0
I use my old batting gloves from baseball, fingers and all. Works great for all the heavy stuff.

I didn't use to use gloves, I'd get massive callouses that required WIRE CUTTERS to trim.

Of course not everyone is machine rowing 240lbs and repping out...

Gloves do NOT comprimise the development of your grip strength. Chalk makes it even easier than gloves do, but most gyms don't allow it. Going completely without aid is absolutely ridiculous for certain people, as too much sweat can make it damn near impossible to have an effective workout.

Not all of us are construction workers and grease monkeys, fucked up hands can make you lose sensation in your hands for certain detail-oriented jobs, or leave a bad impression following a handshake. And if your hands are "baby soft" after lifting for a long time, _you_ are the one doing it wrong, or you're just not very strong yet.
>For pulling close to your fingers (like a hook).
is a dead giveaway, because if you can hold your deadlifting weight "like a hook", you're not lifting much at all.

tl;dr: fuck your macho nonsense:

Hook grip is where the thumb is pressed down on the bar by other fingers and locks the grip in. It's used to hold very, very heavy weights, many o-lifters do use it.

>or leave a bad impression following a handshake.
I come from the school of thought that you look them in the eye and blast away at their hand. If they see that you're strong and thick-skinned, so much the better.

Also, I do understand what the poster was trying to say about improper hand position. You're getting the really thick callouses because you are allowing part of your fleshy padding on your palms near the base of the finger to come between your fingers and the barbell as you lift. This compresses that fleshy tissue between your fingerbones and the bar and causes those distinctive little calluses on the upper palm near the bases of the fingers. Learn how to grip better.

>>if you can hold your deadlifting weight "like a hook", you're not lifting much at all.

Please do yourself a favor and look up what a hook grip is. The olympics are coming up. If you catch weightlifting, look at their fucking hands and notice how they're gripping it.

don't use gloves but my hands are only mildly calloused...
back when i used to do manual labor and lift, my hands were like sandpaper...

Ok, see, that's BS, he said "like a hook", not "hook grip", which, oddly enough, doesn't seem anything like a hook at all. That clearly on-the fly terminology like that didn't make it seem like that's what he was talking about. Despite that, my original point stands, as the hook grip still doesn't prevent calluses, and calluses serve as nothing more than a nuisance for most people.

Well.. it's kind of hard to even get callouses when there's a thumb between the bar and the sweet spot in your hands. It is a legitimate method to prevent callouses, although I just do them to get a good hold of the bar, I don't give a shit about callouses.

I don't use gloves but I have found good wrist wraps to be very useful.

when i started lifting i used gloves for a few months
they gave me the ugliest callouses i've ever had
when i stopped using them the callouses became much less noticable

Here's Rippetoe's advice about deadlift grip: Side 107 in the book.
The top is correct, bottom is wrong.
Top: the bar is positioned at a lower position in the palm "in the hook" as he calls it.

This is his advice on grip for benchpressing.
Note how the bar rests in the palm, on the bone.
>> Anonymous
i used to wear gloves for the comfort, but realised i had better grip without, and more "feel" with the weights.
now i only use cuffprotectors
>> Anonymous
You still get calloused skin even with proper grip technique. Just not to the degree that you would if you held the bar incorrectly.

I've got little callous marks across my palm, but they're only small, hard patches of skin that don't get any worse.

If you're hands are getting completely torn up, you're not holding the bar right.

*your*
>> Anonymous
I have to use gloves. I have permanantly soft skin and I don't develop callouses, so I've actually had the grip on some bars at my gym actually dig in enough to make me bleed.

I have two pairs. Harbinger Pro and Nike Strength training gloves.

He's right. Your is possesive. You're means "you are".

"If your hands are getting completely torn up..." makes sense

"If your are hands are getting completely torn up..." does not.

i need gloves because my hands will get raepd, otherwise. i don't like wrist supports. any kind of brace used for long periods of time makes your joints dependent on support.

also, no. i will never ever stop masturbating. that's right. infinite masturbation.

Are there gloves out there for grip support instead of hand protection? My gym doesn't allow chalk to be used, and as I'm moving up on my deadlifting weight, I find the bar to be getting extra slippery. It's not a grip strength issue yet, as I can still hold onto the bar, it's just that I don't feel very secure without the ultra-tight, non-slipping grip that I used to get with lighter weight.
