Hey, I want to start running on the treadmill and I'm wondering how I can ease myself into it. I tried a few months ago and I ended up fucking my knees up really bad from doing too much. How long should I start running and when should I start increasing the distance?

start by walking 3-4 miles every. get used to the constant impact and range of motion and shit.

1 week later start at a slight job, like 5 mph and go for about 15 minutes. now keep increasing until you feel more comfortable.

most importantly though, usep roper foot wear. that is a must.

also, try putting the incline up, it can help to decrease impact.

You fucking suck at typing.

What do you currently weigh? Running when you're too heavy can really fuck up your knees fast.

First of all you should get proper running shoes. Go to a shoe specialist and find out how much you pronate. When you use a treadmill you should always warm up first by walking for a few minutes, up the speed so you're power walking for a few more minutes and then start jogging/running.

I weigh 130 haha so I shouldn't have to worry about that.

consider the elliptical

elliptical isnt all that great for knees. the aligment is so hard to maintain that leaning forward or sideways just a little bit can make all the wrong body parts have to work hard to compensate for slacking areas.

Couch to 5k works for treadmills.

Why run on a mill? Get the fuck outside. There's fresh air. It's cheaper. More motivating. Hill's. Ect... All win.

So how do I actually ease into running? Take days off in between for a few weeks?

I agree, also if you tried running the same difference outside that you've been doing on a treadmill its a fuckton harder because your body has to compensate for the elevation changes, speed, etc.

Tl;dr, Outside > Treadmill by means of physical conditioning.

Sup OP,
I'm about 130lbs too and I had a run today of about a mile maybe... well more like a walk with some burst of jogging. My knees are now killing me - standing up and walking up stairs just kills.

The thing is I used to be fairly fit, and I've never has knee troubles in the past, but I think finishing uni destroyed all that. I used to ride to uni every day - 2mi, and play indoor football(soccer duh) every Monday night.

I'm gonna go back to cycling I think for a bit, I reckon it must be the impact of running that has screwed me up.
uhh, sorry, this was more of a babble than a useful reply

Look into barefoot running and forefoot striking. If you waddle along with brick-shoes mashing your heels into the ground, your knees will naturally take a beating.

Jump into the pool, exercise your whole body. It's easier on the knees

Too much running in general is going to fuck your knees up, no matter what method you use

Yeah, I fucked up my knees because that was the first exercise I had done in a long ass time. That's why I want to know how to start and not overdue it.

I might try today, how does running 7. - 1 mile 3 times a week for a few weeks sound? And when might I start to bump it up a little?

Weak, but it's a start.

I run 4-5 miles everyday at speeds varying between 5.5 and 9.0 mph.

just to weigh in here -- i'm a 235lb bodybuilder (i'm about 195lb of solid steel wrapped in a garbage bag full of jello) and i tried running last week for intense cardio to help burn off this fat (i usually hit a heavy bag). from just one day of warmup and one day of pushing myself, my knees gave out so badly i was faltering when i walked for most of the week. my left knee still hurts getting out of bed.

One thing i noticed is that the up-and-down jogging pace encourages you to impact your joints in a vertical fashion, which we aren't designed for. try HIIT if keeping a fixed pace is hard on your knees -- sprint like a motherfucker till you can't stand it anymore, then walk till you can breathe again, and alternate. this encourages a wider stride that covers more ground per step and makes more of a scooping motion into the ground rather than a pounding one. this is the only way i could finish my last lap.

If you're trying to get quality cardio, go for time not distance. Around 30 mins.

thats retarded advice...he wont learn proper pose from sprinting...but i dont blame you since you are not a real athlete

TO OP
GO TO THE FUCKEN DOCTOR, guys with a weight of 130 lbs should not get any pains in their knees...use the fucken common sense once in a while...
