You could be fucking with your circadian rhythm due to poor sleep hygiene. Be sure to have darkness and coolness when it's time to sleep (our bodies are made to react to the darkness and coolness of the night) that will tell your body that that is the time of night for sleeping, and it will react to that. Also, when you wake up in the morning be sure to get plenty of sunlight. If you stick with a good disciplined routine (tedious as it may be) you'll train your body to go to sleep easily. I know sometimes there's too much on peoples minds at night, but it's best to just take your medicine and tough through the long periods waiting to get to sleep. Look at it this way: you'll be building up a "reserve" of sleepiness that will eventually come crashing down on you at night, and then you'll be able to wake up at a wonderfully early time the following morning. ROUTINE is the key to fixing your sleep. Other factors that can mess with your sleep: stress, food before sleeping, lack of exercise (gotta burn off all that energy you took in), sleeping environment (is it dark? is it cool? is it quiet? is it comfortable? are you nitpicking little things like a clock ticking?). That's all I can think of at the moment OP. I hope some of that helped you. I've had serious problems with my sleep too, this is some of the stuff I've learned from doctors, and my own personal reading.
