do those things actually work better than normal sit ups and crunches, etc?

I use it to get the proper form for my sit-ups and reverse crunches (it really helps), also I use it for my various dumb-bell exercises, previously I just layed myself down on the floor, etc.

Basically it makes things a lot easier (and comfier!) do to. Plus it opens up for a bunch of new exercises. They're not that expensive either imo.

i go to the gym :3.. other then that i've got a nice racing bike my friend gave me and some boxing gloves i occasionally spar with.. i've actually got a bench and some weights at home but nothing worth using

Oh, well it trains your entire front package in basically one exercise. So it's great for people that don't know how to train to get a good looking chest and so forth.

It works and it's cheap, plus you don't have to waste time on several exercises making each training session a bit shorter.

I have an Ironman Double Ab-wheel almost identical to the one in your pic.

I've done many a situp and crunches in my life, but holy crap, that thing wasted me. I didn't think it'd actually be effective.
