Sup /fit/?
I'm 19, 5'2 and 147-50 pounds.
I was a complete stick up until grade 11 (my average was a very muscular, fit 115 pounds), and since I had to quite my martial arts due to lack of money and Uni.. it's all gone downhill.
I've already lost quite a bit of weight (I weighed 175 at my heighest) but I don't know how. I've stopped losing weight, so I'm at a plateau where all my friends/guys tell me my body is 'curvy' and perfectly cute- But I cannot stand it and just looking in the mirror makes me feel gross.
I look okay from the front, but from the side my belly becomes very very apparent.

It also doesn't help that I cosplay, so I want to be able to wear sexy things and feel hot rather then wonder if someone's calling me a cow behind my back.

All of my weight seems to be in my belly and thighs, nowhere else- And from what I've gathered I need to do alot of cardio. However, my past of insanely intense martial arts leaves me really bored with an average workout and I can't even seem to break a sweat when doing pushups or situps- I hate the fact I can't seem to feel the burn at all and am totally not used to working out on my own without guidance.

This is probably a very garbled post, but help /fit/! I don't want to be a fatty D:

>I look okay from the front, but from the side my belly becomes very very apparent.
True.

>However, my past of insanely intense martial arts leaves me really bored with an average workout and I can't even seem to break a sweat when doing pushups or situps
Pushups and situps are not really cardio. If you did such insanely intense martial arts, you should have the self discipline to get out and run.

Put on some sweats, invest in some decent running shoes, and get out and jog/run. Should be easy for you thanks to your super intense sugoi martial arts desu.

Slow, long distance running is a good cardio workout. Also try mixing it up with sprints, say, jog slowly for a minute, sprint for 30 seconds, alternating like that.

Alternatively, try biking. Low impact, constant speed, keeps your heart rate and breathing up.
>> Anonymous
>>2142
Also, there's a reason you gained all this weight once you stopped doing regular exercise. You eat a lot more than your body needs. Probably pocky and shit. Stop eating candy, soda, pocky, junk food.

And be prepared to lose a cup size or so off those delicious tits.
>> Anonymous
Looks like you have the exact same body I did after quitting ballet, although I don't see stretch marks. Lucky bitch.

Have you tried a cardio workout that incorporates martial arts moves? It might be a bit easier to get into it if you do something that is at least similar to what you used to do, but perhaps not as high intensity until you get back in shape again.

Also, make sure that if you're trying to lose fat, you're also doing weight training or resistance training. Building lean muscle will boost your metabolism, making fat burning a lot more effective. And of course, eat lots of lean protein, and eat carbs in intervals (low carbs for three days, high carbs for three days, etc.) That's been working pretty good for me so far. I was 5'4" and 175, now I've dropped 15 pounds. Still a long way to go, but it takes work.

You aren't fat you aren't fat YOU AREN'T FAT.

Throw away your TV, stop reading People and beauty magazines, and for the love of god don't listen to 4chan's ridiculous notion of what constitutes a healthy weight. You are perfect right now and any doctor would tell you that your BMI is absolutely fine.

I swear if you lose weight and become yet another painfully skinny girl with no curves I will fucking cry.

I know pushups and situps aren't cardio, I worded it shittily-
I have a hard time doing running/tradmill/skipping because I broke BOTH of my shins (at the same time lol) when I was younger and the impact is painful in most cases.
I used to be able to get really good cardio with circuits in MA, but I can't seem to remember or do them properly on my own without the direction because I'm a tard

>>2144
I have the same problem with LD running, and the fact I live in a fucking hueg metropolis and the streets are always full of businessmen and hobos who don't know how to fucking move out of a runners way (I discovered this many times while running late to class)

well yeah, aside from that paunch you do have a delightfully chubby body.

All right, so you're bored with normal cardio? I would be too if I just cycled at the same pace for 30 minutes. So look up High intensity interval training. Basically, you change the speed and intensity every 2-3 minutes, with occasional "sprints" You WILL sweat.

Can you get to a gym? If money is an issue, beg your parents. Tell them it's for your own health.

And don't forget food. Saturated fats and refined sugars are BAD, so put down the bacon and soda. Eat up those veggies for fiber and drink more water (trust me, you're not going to get bloated from it.) Also look into the 4-5 meals a day plan, where you eat small meals or snacks every 3 hours to boost your metabolism.

Aim for 2 lbs. a week of weight loss. DON'T try to crash diet. You have to coax the fat off, not starve it.

If you Plateau it just means that you need to change up your routine. Each day do something different so that your body doesn't adjust to your workout regimen.

Just make it your goal to dedicate 20 minutes every day(NO EXCEPTIONS! Get a day planner and schedule it if you have to!) to some form of high-energy exercise and you'll see a few pounds melt away pretty soon.

If you have access to a gym then get on something low impact. The elliptical, the bike, or the stairmaster. Swimming would also work. You're going to have to work on your boredom however. Read a book, listen to music, play videogames.

What I do is record my teacher's lectures and then listen to them while I work out. study and exercise at the same time.

Don't be so self-centered as to think everyone is watching you. Honestly, people at the gym are way too concerned with their own shit to stare at you and judge you. Stop making excuses and go.
>> Anonymous
>>2203
You have some issues besides just being a chub, but considering you're a cosplayer I guess you're fairly well adjusted. Regardless, get over it. People have better things to do than stare and judge you. Get in the gym and focus on your workout.

Work on judging other people less and you will be less likely to assume they will do it to you.
>> Anonymous
>>2203
I feel the same way, but then I've got anxiety issues up the wazoo.

Try the ellipticals; for some reason I feel too anxious to use the weights in front of everyone but the ellipticals I'm fine with. Also, if you have an mp3 player, that should help take your mind off the people around you. Realistically speaking, everyone will probably be more busy with their own routine to pay much attention to yours.

You don't seem to understand my issue with the shins.
It's not SWINGING my legs or STANDING that hurts, it's the constant slamming of my foot against the ground that creates shock-impact that hurts.
I have no problem walking, kicking, or doing stairs- It's the treadmill and running that I have an issue with.
If you've ever taken Muay Thai you'd know that there isn't a whole lot of running in circles or slamming your feet against the ground repeatedly for 30 minutes.

>>2220
For everyone who says I need to get over myself about the gym, it's totally true and stupid, and I want to shake it- So I'm hoping to get a bit more comfortable with things at home exercise wise and then maybe take it to the gym.
I more have anxiety about guys thinking I'm weak/a moron for using weights more then them staring at my fat- The gym I went to before they would line up and stare at you while waiting to finish so it made me anxious/like I didn't belong there.

So running hurts your poor shins, but slamming them into hard bone structures doesn't? What. That is far far more stress to your shin bone than dropping half your weight on it.

>I more have anxiety about guys thinking I'm weak/a moron for using weights more then them staring at my fat- The gym I went to before they would line up and stare at you while waiting to finish so it made me anxious/like I didn't belong there.
Why are you lifting weights? Go swim, get on a bike, etc. You're trying to lose weight, not become Ahnold.

Meh, depends how fast you are running really, but your shin does not take the full weight impact of your body. Regardless it's much less of a shock than kicking someone with your shin, or kicking someone at all really.

hey, i was EXACTLY in your situation. this is a more specific plan that i think will help you out if you follow it.

go on a low GI diet (low glycemic index).
it mostly means cut out all pasta/bread/rice. if you MUST have it, make sure it's whole wheat pastsa/bread/brown long grain rice no more than once a week.

you eat a TON of vegetables + fruits, meat products (chicken, turkey, no red meat), fish (tuna/salmon), dairy (eggs + whey, i include a few low fat cheeses), nuts/oils. it's basically making sure that you eat enough protein and fat, and limit your simple carbs like breads/pasta. (that means no chips, NO processed foods).

eat 5-6 meals a day, 300-400 calories each, 3 hours a part. you'll be eating LESS, more often, which will boost your metabolism and keep your body from going into starvation mode.

the reasoning for this is that these processed foods spike up your blood sugar, produces more insulin (which will lead to insulin resistance/diabetes, you're an apple shape like i am, so we're more prone to diabetes--we've got more visceral fat, which is fat surrounding the organs), and more insulin means more fat storage.
>> Anonymous
>>2319
Swimming doesn't _feel_ as much like a work out as running does. But is a better cardio for you than running. You burn as many calories and get a full body work out from it at the same time.
>> Anonymous
when you limit your carbs, not only are you storing less fat, but your body burns up all your carbs faster and then goes to fat burning.

you'll feel crappy for the first week or two, so don't get discouraged, you WILL get used to it if you follow it. make sure you drink at least 2 liters of water a day, try to limit your sodium intake (this contributes a lot to water weight).

do weight training 2-3x a week, but most importantly i think HIIT will do you the most help (high intensity, low intervals), goolgle it up. if you don't feel like shit at the end of 20 minutes, you didn't work out hard enough. HIIT should be done at least 3 times a week, it will help you burn more fat in the long run than if you stayed at the gym for an hour at a low intensity cardio (trust me, i did half a year of that 5x a week, barely lost 5 pounds, as soon as i started HIIT the fat started coming off MUCH faster. ).

HIIT can be done on anything, running, biking, ellipticals, stairmaster. just make sure you read up on it. overall gist of what it is, 2 minute light jog, 1 minute sprint, 2 minute light job, 1 minute sprint, repeat until you get to 20 minutes. eventually you'll be able to do 1 minute sprints with 1 minute jogs for 30 minutes within a few months.
make sure after your workout you eat your meal an hour after (make sure it has protein + complex carbs. something like eggs + an apple is good, but you should probably eat more than that)

it's a LOT to adjust to, make sure you save this post and slowly add this to your routine. first add in the HIIT + drink 2 liters of water a day, then slowly ease into the new diet (which isn't a diet, you'll have to WANT this to be your new lifestyle. if you like bread stuff as much as i do, you'll find ways around it, like pizza--- instead of white crust make it with a portabello mushroom).

(btw, i'm 20 5'2" and i was 139 lbs at my highest. right now i'm at 112.).

Drink water when you exercise, sweat. It's good for you and your body will not store unhealthy amounts, you'll piss out what you don't need.

It sure does. I'll dig up the article from one of my old Men's Healths about water and weight loss....

"Thirst can masquerade as hunger, which is one reason dieters should stay hydrated. Now German researchers have found another reason: Water fuels your body's fat burners. For 90 minutes after drinking 16 ounces of chilled H2O, adults saw their metabolisms rise by 23 percent over their average rates. According to the study author, Jens Jordan, M.D., the mechanism is partly due to the energy your body generates to warm the water during digestion. For more H2O benefits, check out "Liquid Power" in this month's Muscle Bulletin."

Yes...I agree with your friends because you're totally fuckable in my eyes. Now down to business.

You've worked out before...done martial arts...gained weight...started losing it...and now have reached a plateau. My suggestion is HIIT...high intensity interval training. Some swear by it...others hate it...I love it.

The goal is to push yourself to the limit of exhaustion where the your glycogen stores are depleted during a work out. This can't usually be done with regular cardio because after glycogen is depleted, your muscles become an hero and start killing themeselves to break down the protein for fuel. That's no good. HIIT is short, grueling, to the point, and provides some excellent results in some people. Problem is that it's too punnishing. It involes intense workouts of pushing your body toward failure (sprinting till your legs burn and lungs can't keep up, lifting weights till your body struggles to complete a rep).

I suggest looking into that...especially if you're an experienced athlete in your mid-teen years.

Under, obviously. This is /fit/, we're talking about healthy body weight here.

I was trying to rephrase that to sound like less of a jerk, but I'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way.

I really don't think you're that far from looking really great.

well aside from losing the 5 when i wasn't doing HIIT but low intensity cardio for 6 months, that brought me down to 134, and i stayed stuck there for 3 months. Over the next month I went to the gym 5-6 times a week and came back to be down to 132 (disappointed at how much effort i put into it and got very little out of it, i ate enough too so I definitely wasn't in starvation mode but i ate too much breads/pasta which isn't good for me since i have a family history of diabetes so it was likely i built up insulin resistance = more fat storage, made sure I read the FAQ on the 7chan board.)

When i started HIIT (just 3 times a week, did weight training about twice a week) and changed my diet i started losing about a pound/pound and a half per week (keep in mind this was after my initial 3 weeks starting the diet, takes about 2-4 weeks for your body to adjust to a low GI diet, so your weight isn't very accurate, don't feel discouraged).

so you can imagine... 130 to 112 , 1-1.5 pounds a week took about 4 months. you could probably do it faster if you did more weight training and did HIIT 4-5 times a week to lose 2 pounds a week.
