Well thats a hard thing to find out because the human body.

It depends on her body chemistry so you might need to ask her

It is hard to tell how long a person has been anorexic based on her appearance. Eating very little will shut down metabolism so she may lose weight very slowly even if she is hardly eating. It is the same if she is bulimic. The large binges keep them looking about average. The easiest way to tell is from their behavior. How long has she seemed depressed? How long has food been freaking her out for? There really is no sure way for you to tell how long she has had an eating disorder without medical tests. Sorry.

Just find a good time when the two of you can talk alone without her feeling cornered by your questions.

thank you very much
but, then, if the metabolism shuts down, then how do people lose weight by starving themselves? it just doesnt make any sense to me... but thank you very much for actually caring

Anyway, you need to remember that Anorexia can happen suddenly (Ie, someone tells her she is fat, she packs in eating) or gradually (She finds eating less and less makes her better lookin, and decreases the amount of food she's eating to nearly zero), so there may not be a certain "time" she started. Also, metabolism will determine the rate of decline in body mass.

The best way to determine would be based on her "fixations". Can you ever remember her just randomly sparking up a conversation about food, calories, fat or anything? Or if you've ever been grocery shopping, did she stop to read every food label? If you've ever had her round for a meal, did you find that she'd spend a lot of time talking during the meal, then throwing a considerable amount of food away? These are all good signs. If you can't ever remember a history of this, chances are it's a recent onset, in which case, act now on her behalf.

They will still lose weight, but very slowly compared to someone who is taking weight off through proper diet and exercise.

They also lose their muscles at a faster rate than the fat on their body, if I remember correctly. This includes cardiac muscle, which is why they tend to die of heart failure.

If you can get her to eat a healthy diet and exercise, she would probably see that the weight would come off better than from not eating at all. But you aren't going to be able to make her do that because she probably needs therapy and has more issues causing anorexia than just feeling fat.

Also, I don't know how old you and your friend are, but this sums everything up pretty well...
