Tips on getting started running? Anonymous
So I suck at running. I've always sucked at running. I imagine that, right now, I can run for like 5 minutes tops without having to stop.

Help me get started, because I know it's the best form of cardio and pretty much all you need are shoes. Not to mention every girl I know who runs is really hot and i want to look like them.

Current goal is 30 minutes.

HALP!

Pic clearly unrelated.

I ran for a long time, and I have to say, it doesn't do much for your physique other than make you look weaker, and it will take its toll on your joints at some point. If I were you I'd look into cycling, but if you find running fun, cool.

With that said, I never really had a routine. I didn't keep it up for that long, but at my peak I could run 10 miles in an hour, and this took about 2-3 months to build up to. All I did was ran every day and pushed the envelope further each time. You'll feel like puking/passing out after each session if you're doing it right.

Anyway, that's all there is to it really, just keep breaking the physical limitations every time you run until you become comfortable with that amount of expenditure. Once you're able to run 10-20 miles in a single sitting, start taking gap days, otherwise you'll seriously overtrain and end up wishing you were dead.

I'm trying to slim down (girlfag @ 5'5" and 140 lbs)

Thanks for the advice, I guess. :( I'm afraid of the commitment... BUT I CAN DO IT. BECAUSE I WANNA BE HAWT.

Run slower. Seriously, you should be breathing hard when you run but you should never run out of breath. If if you feel like you're running out of breath, slow the fuck down, even if you're just barely going faster than walking. You should always have to stop from muscle fatigue as opposed to oxygen deprivation.

lift weights bitch

muscle burns fat. It's a permanent solution. Running is only a temporary caloric expenditure.

Don't worry, I'm working on weight training too. The problem is, I don't really know where to start. I mean, I do 300 ab exercises a day (100 regular crunches, 100 leg lifts, 100 bicycles) and I mess around with 5 lb weights whenever I'm sitting down (curls and then like other stuff, I don't know what they're called, clearly I'm a noob at this), but I don't really have a routine further than that.

:( help.

Post pics so we can recommend stuff with at least vague accuracy.

Using weights that don't fatigue your muscles after 10 or 15 repetitions isn't going to help you with weight loss or toning up. Try three or four sets that fatigues your target muscle(s) by the 9th or 10th repetition (you should feel like you can't perform another rep in proper form by the 9th or 10th time).

Running is pretty good cardio, especially if you want to slim down your legs, but it's pretty harsh on your joints, especially if you're doing it wrong. Most long distance runners I know just look like a bag of bones, which is okay for wimmenz I suppose. For motivation, cardio exercise burns more calories per hour -while doing it-, but weight lifting burns calories for up to a day afterwards, while your body repairs itself. Plus, more muscle = more calories burnt sitting around surfing the interwebs and just being sedentary.

I'm pretty bad with jogging too. When running in wild nature i can last up to 30-40 minutes (max) as I'm jogging slower than on treadmill (where I can last up to 20min max). When I started I was about the same as you, 5min max and had to push really hard to get 15min running at school.

Trust me, your endurance will grow very fast, go for it!
I myself would love to do some long term jogging, as planning to take part of a marathon any time in the future, just as soon as I'm ready for this.

Next goal right now is to push myself to 60-90 minutes in the woods and up to 45minutes on treadmill!

run slower and for longer

OP, do you by any chance have got flatfeet and splayfeet ?

This is what i have got, and the influence is pretty has pretty much impact on your performance.

But this is something you can't change, only helping it a bit with some shoe lifts.

lol, you'll need to do a lot more than running to become a trap.

I started running 3 weeks ago. The first time I only held out for 10 minutes and I felt like dying afterwards and could barely walk anymore for the rest of the day. I always increased my time and now 3 weeks later I can hold out for an hour, without being out of breath and able to walk normally when done. So yeah, endurance grows extremely fast.

Thanks for all the advice, anon. I feel better. Gonna go jog today and I'll see how far I can push myself.

Wow, how often did you run?

i've recommended this dozens of times before on here but i'll post it again because after 10 years of me only being able to run 5 minutes, i can now run 30 minutes, and i started this thing only a few months ago

couch to 5k run plan, it's 9 weeks of runs 3x/week starting with intervals that gradually get longer. there's also a podcast by robert ullrey on here: http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/ he puts music together and voices in when you're supposed to run or walk, makes it much easier than looking at a clock.

Wikipedia says that flat feet doesn't affect speed or anything.

I've tried this before and it's great and definitely helps. It's just that something always comes up where I'll have to miss a week, like I'll go out of town or I'll have school 'til 9 at night or something.

Not OP, but recently I've been looking to start running, and I have a couple of questions.

I'm a fatty, about 40 lb over weight, and I'm worried about the integrity of my joints. Should I try losing some weight before I begin running?
Also, my entire life I've walked with my right ankle turned inward; I'd say no more than a 10 degree angle, but it's still a noticeable bend. Should I correct my stance (will be difficult, I'm sure), and if I don't, do I need to worry about my ankle?

In the meantime, I'm going to start>>133782's provided link; it looks like it'll help me drop some weight and be low impact.
