Hey /fit/

I've got a fucked up back, scoliosis fucked up.Doctors (been to more than one and a back specialist) say they didn't catch it early enough so correction with a brace isn't a possibility anymore. The only thing now I can do is wait and get xray-ed once every-so-often.

My back hurts like shit when I wake up in the morning, I can't do too much for lifting, yadda, yadda....

So question: anyone out there heard of any alternative methods to help "treat" this condition? I say "treat" because there isn't really any getting rid of it but anything out there that could help with pain, muscle stiffness and some nerve pinching? I had one guy suggest I start an easy pilates stretching routine daily.

What do you think?

Also, not that this changes things much, but I am female.

marijuana, and then work out
did wonders for me, I was in pain all day every day, now I'm not.

I have minor scoliosis. You can try doing activities that require good posture such as stretching and stay away from activities that give off bad posture, such as sitting in a chair in front of a computer. You can also try swimming. Maybe yoga too?

prayer and mental concentration. be determined. visit a temple and speak to someone about cabala. or maybe a masonic lodge member can find a healer to help you, probably for no charge.

stay away from hatha-yoga. i have it on good authority that it is black magic. the two headed serpent symbol.. one is for descent, you're not taught of such but why do you want to pose if not for magic.

wikipedia/sitting. 135 degree is good for pain taking pressure off.

brookers from youtube has scoliosis but she got a velcro brace to sleep in but hers looked extreme on the xray so what you need is a second opinion. and third. and chiropractor if all else fails. meditate on it and don't try to change it, just try to feel it first. do this

Should I be worried about visiting chiropractors? I know this kind of stuff is right up their alley but would the curves in my spine make me I guess like a "higher risk" patient? I don't have really any experience with them.

I fractured my spine when I was 17 (burst fracture). Recovered and now I am benching and squatting normally, although I experience slight back pain and phantom pain in my right leg. MRI shows the fracture as stable and solidified, so there is nothing to worry about really. Marijuana helps wonders, and incidentally reduces my exam stress (in uni here) as does creatine (shown to be neuroprotective in recent studies).
>Should I be worried about visiting chiropractors?
Stay the fuck away from them, seriously. They are NOT real doctors, and most haven't a clue what they are doing. Read the wiki on the whole practice for starters.

Stretching, swimming, marijuana, creatine are all avenues you should explore.

Swimming and stretching both sound good to me. What about other exercises? Are there some I should completely avoid just to be safe?

I dated a girl who had scoliosis, but she wore a brace most in highschool.
Her back is a lot better now and she is a lot hotter now too, but oh well.
bitch has gotta be

i have scoliosis too. You need to learn your bodys limits and what works for you. some exercises are really a pain in the ass with scoliosis but flawless form helps alot. shitty form and i always have trouble moving the next day. Stretch alot and get a proper massage if the pain gets too high. and by proper i mean a massager that almost makes you cry and not some thai girls shit.

Allison? is this about you?

OP, I also got Scoliosis. Is surgery not an option? Cause I got surgery for that shit, and I'm al right.

OP here.

I tried some basic stretching this morning after getting out of the shower and that seemed to help a bit -- I'm not expecting any overnight results though.

Is there a certain style of massage you are referring to by any chance? I've limited knowledge on that subject.

No.

Surgery is an option but I'd rather not go that route unless it is absolutely necessary.

there was a episode of greys anatomy about it, cant remember what they did, but it worked.

stretching and warming up are the only worthwhile things I learned in PE class in school.

Ken Griffey Jr. didn't stretch and he became a wasted talent.

Stretching > Squats

maybe try some yoga poses (commercialized stretching) off youtube too.

use a brace anyway and endure hours of excruciating pain at night to correct the problem

Seriously, surgery is not that bad. I was scared shitless, but I was sent to sleep with Anesthesia, so it's all good.

female scoliosis fag here. I used to have little to no problems with my back and had mild (37 degrees from L1 to T11) scoliosis when I exercised (1 cardio : 1 cycling : 1 yoga). But when I stopped I progressed to severe scoliosis (45 degrees) in less than 1.5 years. Now I'm pretty much limited to light cardio and shit loads of pilates.

All I can really suggest is stretching before/after going to bed, and doing daily exercise like pilates/yoga to keep up your fitness. Once you get unheathy/already unhealthy the problem increases by over 9000 percent.

I have scoliosis also and the best things I have found to keep it in check are a combination of heavy deadlifting and back bridges...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvVVMNVMqhc
Do the back bridges at least twice a week or more, this will help keep your spine aligned and helps stop the pain.
With the deadlifts start out light and work your way up in weight over time making sure to keep perfect form, this will strengthen your back muscles so they will keep your spine as straight as possible, just do the deadlifts once or twice a week and you will be good

Samefag here
I thought id mention that the back bridges I do differ slightly from the ones in the video in that i continue to use my arms to help support the head and i rock back and forth while doing the bridge.
Try it you wont regret it,

for me it just lessens the amount of general pain you get (i.e. lifting things, bending over, walking/standing for ages). But it also helps you a train a better posture, sitting up straight for a long time used to cramp my back but now it isn't a problem. It won't completely get rid of pain/stiffness when you wake up in the morning but it does lessen the time it takes to get over it.

Other than that, if it's really bad just save up for surgery. Definitely worth it in the end if you are up to it. I'm booked in March for mine. : )
