I have been jogging on a treadmill for the past two months and I plan to move out into the real world. How can I tell my distance traveled? Should I reset my odometer and drive it? Sneak into the local JC and use their track? Any fantastic bits of technology or simple runners tricks to finding out how far and fast I am going?

They have jogging/walking/step trackers that come in watch form. A good buy is a heartbeat monitor. Tells you when you are at that optimal heart rate and makes your jog more efficient.

And like you said you can drive the route, use google maps/world to estimate, count the number of blocks... I use to run the nearby lake and I just looked up the distance online.

I used to try using my trip odometer, but it was pretty unreliable. Cars aren't really meant to measure those distances with any degree of accuracy.

Odds are you're already pretty locked in to a certain pace that you feel comfortable with. Since you run on a treadmill, you should have a pretty good idea of what that is. Just time how long you run, and do the math.

If you do live near a track, you can use that to calculate your pace as well.
