Hi, /fit/.

I want start training martial arts. I decided to pick up between KRAV MAGA and TAEKWONDO. So here is my questions, /fit/:

1) which one helps me to improve my coordination of movement, flexibility etc.?
2) which one is more effective with self-defence?
3) which one should I choose? I am 18, a bit athletic, ~180cm (5'11)

Since you're a lucky bastard and have the option, krav maga.

*here are my questions, sorry.

Tae Kwon Do for no. 1. Krav Maga for no. 2.

krav maga

For strictly self defense, choose krav maga.

For fun, exercise and overall enjoyment, choose Tae Kwon Do. TKD will also increase your flexibility and it'll most likely improve your movement coordination.

Krav Maga isn't necessarily a martial art as it is a survival combat system. It's built for fatal combat and it has helped kill people in the heat of war. There is no 'martial way'; there is only a kill-or-be-killed mentality. It's a great self defense system, albeit a bit too serious if you're looking for some 'fun'. Hope I helped.

why krav maga? Is it hard to learn? When i get results?

Because it's a martial art, where you focus on destroying your opponents balls.

I'm fucking serious here.

krav maga--its superior and practical--all "sport" and "traditional" martial arts are total bullshit--don't let anyone/trolls tell you otherwise. You want to spend your time learning a brutal and practical method, and this is it (coincidentally, the same moves exist in other arts as well, including the CQB kinesology taught in Marine Corps boot camp, which the poster has done).

As a black belt in TKD, I can tell you that it doesn't give you shit for effective self-defense. It does, however, help your balance and flexibility... but any martial art will do that.

Do both.

There was a debate about what martial art was most effective for multiple opponents. We had our Aikido fags, our BJJ Fags, Muay Thai fags.

Only person who I agreed with was the guy that recommended track and field for combat situations.

Short of that, Krav Maga is essentially do whatever the fuck it takes to get the hell out of there and survive, so I'm thinking they probably advocate a kick to the nads and running in 90% of all situations. This is the best plan.

check local dojos first before you start
if you're interested in tkd, do some research
most are just mcdojos which are crap

if you decide to go into TKD, you will gain a lot speed, but not strength. its ok as self-defence since you should be able to land a kick on someone's face quickly.

I can't believe someone would be choosing between two such radically different arts.

Krav Maga is all about real world practicality.

Tae Kwon Do is all about ridiculous acrobatics and overly stylized and inefficient kicks.

The real question is: Is there an MMA school near you or perhaps a Muay Thai place?

Both those options would teach you much more in regards to self-defense and both would also push you fantastically in regards strength, coordination and conditioning.

1.TKD
2.Krav Maga
3. Definitely Krav Maga, as an effective form of self-defence there aren't many useful techniques out there that haven't been incorporated into Krav Maga on some level. Im fucking jealous you have the option of taking it.

Although Krav Maga>TKD in this situation you'll still find a lot of bullshitty schools that teach you nothing.

Muay Thai, Boxing etc would be a safer bet for self defence.

In before getting burnt for quoting TV shows as a reference, but as someone who's practiced and is interested in martial arts, this helped me.

If you can, go torrent the episodes for TKD and Krav Maga for the series "Human Weapon." Yeah, it's primarily shitty cable entertainment, the guys are annoying, but it'll immediately highlight the differences between the two.

If you want to be in the Israeli Defense Force, or part of an outfit that places a lot of emphasis on being able to fucking -kill- people you fight, no matter where you are, and no matter what you have at hand, using techniques designed to be simple and efficient, fuck yeah, Krav Maga. On the other hand, I doubt you'll have access to a quality school where you can learn it, unless you're in the IDF. Other defense forces have their own combat disciplines, which are based on essentially the same principles though.

TKD is what I did for about 6 years. It made me fit, flexible, I really enjoyed it, and because it wasn't pure TKD, and had some emphasis on self defense in the real world, and other martial arts disciplines (we learned basic grappling technique,) I wouldn't say it's totally useless. But nothing to get over-excited about either, compared to something like Krav Maga. I learned martial arts and real world fighting technique, but it didn't make me a killing machine.

TL;DR: Krav Maga is serious business, TKD isn't.

Only if the TKD gym isn't full of pussies.

When I took TKD we would spar with NO gear and most of the time 3v1 to give you some hardcore fighting practice. Just about everyone would leave with bloody dripping from somewhere or a shiner. Also if your a weak skinny fuck then obviously TKD isn't going to help, you need POWER behind your attacks. If you have the power then TKD is great, especially if you have long legs, your opponent won't get near you. Also if you don't have control over your fight or flight, making you forget your martial arts skills, then you clearly haven't been doing it long enough.

Fact of the matter is, in a real fight people don't tend to throw kicks unless someone's on the ground or curled up/bent over. You get in there fucking fast and start punching or pulling to the floor to punch. If you're serious about self defence stay away from martial arts which rely heavily on kicking. Such as TKD. And go for fighting styles such as krav maga which are designed to get you in close and get you out fast. Look at the practicalities like other anon's have mentioned. Krav Maga is used by one of the best militaries in the world who find themselves in perpetual intense conflict. Krav Maga ftw.

I did TKD for about 5 years competitively and while I don't regret it I wouldn't choose it right now if I had to pick. Pure TKD isn't very good self defense. It's more about style. Ofcourse, it's infinitely better than doing nothing.

What I can suggest is if you are somewhat flexible to teach yourself some of the kicks, it's not too hard to do and some of them are really good and will make a nice compliment to whatever else you end up doing.

OP here. Thanks. I decided do pick up Krav Maga.
