I had a soft tissue injury to my left knee. It had a similar effect on me: it hurt to even stand up from a sitting position, much less do anything sporty, so I quit all athletic activities. I got depressed, gained weight and got weak and soft. After about a year of doing nothing, I eased back into walking, then easy jogging (seriously a 15 minute mile, and not even going the full mile). I did bodyweight exercises to keep the rest of me in shape, and actually bodyweight squatting kept my legs flexible and toned if nothing more. If a 20 minute walk is all you can bear, then do that. Would a knee brace help?
