So, /fit/, I have gotten myself into a bit of a pickle.
a few days ago, a few of my friends had the first fight of a sort of "Backyard MMA" thing. It's judged, ref'ed, the whole nine yards. the first fight was my best friend and a guy that parties with us every now and then.
WELL, after the fight, everyone started talking about the next fight day, which will be June 27th. We started to talk about who could fight then, and myself and my friend, who are both about the same size, decided we would go. He is in a bit better shape than me, but I am better at the wrestling aspect of it. I'm about 5' 11'', 210. I don't really work out, but as of tomorrow I have a membership to a mega-Gym, so anything I need, equipment-wise, is at my fingertips. Also, I have no job for the summer, so this is top priority and I can stay at the gym all damn day if I want.

TL;DR, I got myself into an MMA fight and I have until June 27th to prepare. What should I do.

noone at all?
Come on, I can go all out if I want to. 10 hours a day at the gym if need be. What should I do.

cardio cardio cardio cardio ...seriously strength helps in fights but stamina is everything in a fight..if you watch any UFC the person that wins is usually always the one who doesnt crap out first

should I do ANY strength training? or just cardio for 3 weeks...
>> Anonymous
SAGE'ing this shit.

You're not going to be able to make any significant strength gains in three weeks. You said you have experience in wrestling, so play to your strengths.
If the guy you're "fighting" doesn't know anything about grappling you shouldn't have any trouble taking him down. Just keep him on bottom and throw shots, or learn a super basic submission like an Americana or something.

Good luck.

wrestling is mega gay. sage

coming from a fellow wrestler.. playing the ground game has helped me win countless fights. EZ take downs come from single/double legs since there anticipating u standing in there face. once on the ground if aloud ( street fights..anything legal) choke their ass..makes them tired as hell very fast then u can lock in moves like body scissors and elbow/punch the shit outta there face

You're probably going to take a fluke shot to the face and break it, you also could die with no medical staff at hand.
>> Anonymous
if he doesnt have as much wresting experience use that.
>> Anonymous
just curious you using gloves or anything?...it not make sure u can make a solid fist. poor form easily leads to broken fingers/wrist

sage for MMA. They need to figure out a better name for this shit. I don't want these stupid rednecks associated with me.

That is kind of what I was planning on doing. I'm not BAD at the boxing aspect, but he is better.
>>156114
We do have medical staff on hand. one is a trained RN i believe. plus, it is about a 2 minute car drive from the biggest hopsital in town, so if need be we are close to that.
>>156123
Yes, we are using gloves, wraps, mouthpieces, and all.

gotta start somewhere...

I am coaching foro a friend who is also training for his first amateur MMA tourney; also interested what people have to say about the topic. He has six months though...

Right now I've got him doing Interval Training for cardio, then focus on building his legs, back, Triceps and Obliques to improve his overall striking power. Smith-Machine Squats or Lunges is my usual go to exercise, because it builds legs, back and it keeps the heart rate up.

I don't know how to train to receive damage though. he's been doing sit-ups to strengthen his abs, but not sure about his chin...
>> Anonymous
best training for pain tolerence to chin is no lie chin ups and slap your chin off the bar when u do it...sure it will bruise but continious bruising makes your skin tougher and made my chin alot harder
>> Anonymous
>>156156
pretty sure that shots to the chin (and face in general) are pretty hard to train for. other than learning the appropriate technique to absorb as much damage as possible, you kind of jsut have to be able to take it. some people can, some cant
just start dealing a bit of damage to him during practice, whether that be through sparring or what.

Ooh ooh! how about that thing in Wiisports where the trainer throws tennis balls at you and you have to dodge them?

Does that actually work IRL?
>> Anonymous
>>156155
You're not starting anywhere. Martial arts aren't the same as boxing.

if you can dodge a wrench....

so what you're saying is, since you have no actual martial arts training, you and your friends are playing "fight club".

how cute.

the first rule of backyard mma is DON'T TALK ABOUT BACKYARD MMA.

the second rule of backyard mma is DON'T TALK ABOUT BACKYARD MMA.

>I don't know how to train to receive damage though. he's been doing sit-ups to strengthen his abs, but not sure about his chin...

IIRC, his chances of getting KO'd increase drastically if his mouth is open when he's hit.
Might be something to watch for when he's tired during a sparring session.

>Smith-Machine Squats

If you have access to free weights, please use them.

The smith machine can lead to underdeveloped ligaments in the knee and a whole bunch of other problems.

Cardio. Sparring (with someone on your skill level or better). Drills.

If you can submit a guy before he knows it, you don't need to worry too much about your strength.

What you need to worry about is your speed and ability to flow from take down, to submission, to submission.

If your friend has little training he'll probably telegraph a lot of his moves (as will you). Practice watching for punches and kicks while sparring.
How the hips and shoulders move, etc.

Always have 2-3 moves in your head so you can go
to the next one if it fails. However you're first attempt
at submitting him should be as serious as any other.

If the gym has a heavy bag, use it frequently.

tl;dr? Sorry it's kinda hard to sum up...

if OP is really not a troll, then train your fucking neck.

Tanya Harding the motherfucker, you can't do much in less than a month with just a gym. Much that counts anyways.

You'd get much more out of training boxing/wrestling skills rather than strength in that period.
>> Anonymous
There is only one option here, op. Go to the fight, enjoy your broken teeth, nose and damaged shins and then realise why people train all their lives before they start fighting.

Seriously, in my muay thai school they don't let you full contact spar until 1 month or more has passed. People with no experience do more damage to theirselves than the opponent.

Thanks for the tip. I got him using Smith Machines cuz he can lift more without worrying about stability, but yeah he does dumbbell squats and Leg Presses too.

I'm pretty new to training someone for MMA. Anything else important? I hear that Flexibility is more important than muscle power in a fight, is that true?
>> Anonymous
>I got him using Smith Machines cuz he can lift more without worrying about stability

You should definitely worry about stability even if it means lifting with less weight. It's the difference between knees that are healthier after doing squats than knees that are worse. I would say cut out use of the Smith Machine entirely.

If the squats are being done properly with a working weight that only allows him to do 8 reps per set, forget the leg press too.

>I hear that Flexibility is more important than muscle power in a fight, is that true?

Sorry, I don't know much about that. I wouldn't say it's more important but equally important.

An inflexible fighter can get submitted in no time and will have decreased striking ability whether it be punching or kicking. Strength, agility, flexibility, and stamina are a must for MMA fighters.

If your fighter is stronger than he his flexible, keep training his strength, striking power, etc. but work on his flexibility more

Throw in some military presses, make sure he stretches properly after your workouts, and apply some of the advice I gave in

>>156200

It isn't as structured as I'd like it to be but I hope that helped! Best of luck!

Fuck this cardio shit. You're fighting against a noob. You want to work on explosive power to end the fight as quickly as possible. Explosive punches and explosive take downs.
>> Anonymous
if i was you id do bas ruttens mma workout - not much other stuff will do you much in such a short time - also get a sparing partner
>> Anonymous
>>156365<---- also get a sparing partner
that

and do some shadow boxing and light cardio. you only have 3 weeks.
forget the gym. you will be sore and stiff with no range of motion, totally screwing your wrestling advantage. try to circle away from his initial punches. even if they land, you wont get your bell rung. or you might. good luck.

Join an MMA gym and stop goofing around in your back yard.

I actually like this idea more than anything. Although, the guy is a smoker, so doing cardio and outlasting him might be better...
