i gained 120 lbs in 6 years Anonymous
Hey /fit/

18 year old female here.

When I was 12, I weighed about 110lbs. I remember I used to think I was fat, so I was a bit above average weight for a kid my age. Anyways, I am now 18 and 230 lbs.

I eat the same as I did then, I don't exercise much, but I never really have. I'm thinking I have a underactive thyroid, but I haven't gone to the doctor to check because I haven't had time... Though recently I have been concerned that I haven't had my period since July. I'm a virgin, no chance of me being pregs.

Is it possible for an underactive thyroid to be causing this? I like not having my period, but If it's making me get fatter I don't want!

What do I do to lose weight? I've tried exercising before but it never helps :/ Should I go see a doctor? Would the doctor help me lose weight?

was 30 min on treadmill at jogging speed. every other day and then the days i didn't do that i did cardio, weight lifting, yoga.

At that weight I'm not surprised.

I think you just have a weak metabolism; if you want to burn fat, you have to do mid-intensity (high aerobic level) exercise for very long periods of time; anything for a short time just uses energy, which actually makes you eat more, and increases the chance of you gaining weight.

So, in conclusion, eat well, and do moderate exercise for extended periods.

Obviously you have lots of stored fat and are getting it from somewhere. So you're either eating TONS of "milk and cereal", or you're eating shitty foods. Watch your calories and fat intake.

Join a local gym and start participating in their various aerobic classes as often as you can. You should try jogging/running again every other day. You can warm up and then start doing some stuff like 30 minutes on an elliptical (5 minute warm up, 2 minutes at 95% heart rate, 1 minute rest, 2 minute at 95%, 1 minute rest, etc).

You're body is a machine and responds to the fuel you put in it, and the performance you demand of it. This means it's far from hopeless to get yourself back into good shape, but you do have to work for it to reverse the state you've put it in.

How often do you eat? You want to make sure you're doing at least 3 meals a day so you aren't starving yourself and causing your metabolism to slow down to conserve energy. I would actually try to eat 4 - 6 times a day if I were you, just make sure you're only eating healthy items like yogurt, fruits/nuts, salads, whole wheat bread, etc. These are non-fatty foods that will keep you from gaining weight, but also make your body's metabolism kick it into high gear. Also make sure you are drinking lots of water (stay away from soda).

Yea, definitely start eating a sensible breakfast. No eating is not good for you and will only hurt your goal of losing weight (sounds backwards, but that's how your body works. More fuel = less need to conserve = less body fat. Just make sure you're putting in clean fuel).

If you start forcing yourself to drink lots of water(just constantly sip on water through out your day), that will help expand your stomach and you'll be able to eat more.

Start yourself off small. Have 2 pieces of wheat toast in the morning. You can also buy some of those light already made smoothie products(they run ~130 calories and 0gs of fat) if you want a breakfast that is a little more portable.

The reason why you running isn't working is because the diet you have is shit. Losing weighr is 30% excercise 70% diet. You eating small and empty meals mean that your starving yourself decreasing the rate of your metabolism so it can burn fat off more slowly to help have enough energy throughout the day. Just eat a small meal every 3 hours like a cup of cottage cheese or some chicken with greens etc. That would help boost your metabolism and also since your metabolism is back up to speed and you eating 500 calories less then your calorie intake deficit you should be losing 3 lbs a week or 2 lbs a week.

Being overweight or underweight fucks up with your period. If your period isn't regular, it's your bodys way of saying something is really wrong. It's different for different people.

If you have a thyroid condition you should be watching what you eat even more than normal. Fuck, people with diabetes have to do the same. Cereal with sugar in it isn't going to help, start eating your breakfast and your veggies.

try sleeping more - your liver switches to fat metabolism while you sleep. If you dont sleep enough, your body burns less fat day by day and stores it in your fat cells.
stop eating sugar altogether (as much as you can manage).
also vegetarian chicks seem to stay slim easier. or vegetarian + chicken/turkey/fish

the best advice I can give you: just keep busy. do yardwork, housework, school work, get good grades, earn good money, etc. focus on the problems you can solve. then you won't care so much about your weight and you may get in shape anyway. your build may be genetic.
