Sup /fit/

I have hypothyroid and polycystic ovarian syndrome. I'm like...30 pounds overweight. I'm having the hardest time EVER losing weight because of those two health complications...

Any tips on how to help me lose weight? I don't eat fast food, I don't drink soda and I go to the gym usually five times a week for like...an hour

But when I go to the gym it's usually bike and elliptic.

What do you think, /fit/? I've been at it for months and I'm not losing much...

For one, do you eat breakfast? That's helpful for trying to lose weight

eat protein

and talk to your doctor if you haven't. They might wanna give you drugs to help your hypothyroid so you can burn weight faster.

good luck

I'm in the same situation. On the pill for the PCOS, untreated for the thyroid so far but I'm in discussions about an iodine treatment. Fuck.

I put on 20lbs (no change in diet, no change in exercise) since that shit hit the fan. I know how hard it is to diet and exercise, but see nothing. I wish I had a secret, but honestly I don't think you'll make any progress or get any good advice here (just a bunch of dicks suggesting diets/routines that would work great if you were a dude or maybe a hormonally-balanced female).

Talk to your doctor. They'll do some blood tests probably, calculate your BMI, and give you advice that'll work.

I wish we could get in touch to encourage each other, because it is so fucking frustrating to dedicate time and energy to a routine that results in nothing but disappointment. But I'm too much of a pussy to put any kind of personal information on 4chan, even if this is "just" /fit/.

>I have hypothyroid and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
one comes from the other (usually), you have polycystic ovarian syndrom because of your hypothyroid.

Go to doctor he will perscribe T3, T4 for ya, if you are gaining weight, feel sluggish, cold, other notice that you talk too slow, that mean that the dose isn't high enouph

After that go to gym, and SQUATZ.... well you know the rest.

First get your hypothyroidism under control

hypothyroidism can cause weight gain, but polycystic ovarian syndrome is more an associated condition of many fatass females (i.e., doesnt cause obesity and typically resolves with weight loss.

anyways fat lady, learn to count your calories meticulously. everyone, and i mean -everyone-, underestimates how much they're taking in. figure that shit out, and cut calories until you start losing weight (at a healthy rate).

don't eat anything processed...just because they generally don't satisfy hunger and have too many calories. eat vegetables, chicken breast/turkey breast, fat free cottage cheese, lentils, eggs, 100% rolled oats (not the sugary shit) and maybe some whole wheat bread once in awhile.

don't fucking blame your weight on medical conditions. if you're on synthyroid, your thyroid hormones should be relatively normal, unless your doctor is a fuckup. and again PCOS usually -resolves- with weight loss and comes back if you get obese again.

as an alternative... :)
you can start taking your madicine in a slightly higher amount, that would do the trick ^@,..,@^

Side effects: muscle weakness, wide eyes, pulse over 90 :)

But dont worry, you body can take it if not overdone ;)
Trick is: the dose must be SLIGHTLY higher then you need :)

My doctor told me PCOS runs in my family, my mom has it too, and that weight loss wouldn't resolve it for me, but I should get my weight under control or else it could cause further health complications.

And I understand I shouldn't blame the complications, but they honestly do make it hard for me to lose weight. I really come from a shitty health background, and it's been tough as hell. But I guess I'll go back to the doctor and talk to him about it.

Thanks /fit/

I also have PCOS. I've found that since doing strength training the pounds melted off. Lower your carbs and do heavy strength training. PCOS is caused by insulin resistance and the only want to drive insulin into cells is to create a demand for the insulin. By decreasing your carb intake, you will overtime decrease your insulin output. By doing strength training you will help your body use up excess insulin. Do not do cardio as your primary exercise, it will NOT help.

does PCOS not always encourage weight gain?

My g/f says she has polycystic ovaries yet she is very slim. afaik she has none of the symptoms I read are associated with the problem. What gives?

Also, she's been told she may have trouble conceiving. How much trouble though?
Her mother was told the same but she managed to have 4 children!

Maybe one of you could give me some insights.
I will quiz her more at some point but she's not very well informed tbh.

PCOS does not equal excess weight. The weight gain is purely genetics. My father has been slightly overweight all his adult life and my mother has been obese all her adult life which was partly why I am having weight issues. Your gf may have problems conceiving. Thats the problem with PCOS -- not too much is known about it. A lot of PCOS, if not too far advanced, may easily be reversed with exercise, proper nutrition and weight loss if needed. At the core of PCOS is usually insulin resistance to some degree.

PCOS may just manifest in your gf as irregular menses, horrible cramps, and actual cysts on her ovaries. Theres not a set list of diagnostic criteria that the medical community is using across the board. Let me know if you have any questions. Also this site: soulcysters.net is very helpful if you are still curious.

>polycystic ovarian syndrome is more an associated condition of many fatass females

Not true. The relationship of PCOS and weight gain is not fully understood. It may be that poor eating habits (e.g. high carb/high sugar) may cause PCOS while simulatanously cause weight gain.

Do not ever do this. I am hoping you were just joking. A lot of people could hurt themselves doing this.

PCOS acts differently with each person. My mom has PCOS and can lose weight very easily, however could not conceive children without the help of a pill. So there ya go.

It varies, just depends to the extent your girlfriend has it.

OP, I'm struggling with the same things you are. PCOS + Hypothyroidism, months of working out and no results.

For the record, the thyroid problem causes weight gain but another thing that can cause it is the treatment for PCOS, which is usually some form of birth control. Most birth control methods can cause weight gain.

That being said, I've been eating a lot of protein and veggies, and some starch here and there..Is there anyone out there who's successfully lost weight with these conditions? I'm thinking about upping my medicine dosage but I'm not sure that would work very well..

You're going to have to consult a doctor (numerous doctors if they give okay/bad advice or don't seem to care).

I have bookmarked that site and will take a look today, thank you.

It seems the only symptom she actually has is the actual cysts on her ovaries.
Her menstrual cycle is very regular (but she is on the contraceptive pill, which I think can help keep it regular)

She has very heavy bleeding though, but I don't think this is unique to PCOS.

Thanks a lot for your input. I expect you are much better informed on the subject than my gf
