The number one thing that helps though, is not engaging in mind-numbing entertainment. This one is a bitch as far as getting yourself to do it, but whenever I can do it for a long time, I am much happier. As little video games, TV, reading of bite-sized content websites (reddit, digg, 4chan) as possible. Minimize instant gratification crap.

Most Americans minds are adjusted to such unnaturally high levels of entertainment that reality seems extremely boring to them. It becomes harder and harder to be satisfied with anything but the high-stimulation activities, so much so that it becomes difficult to do/enjoy anything else. Once you lower your brains level of expected entertainment, you will find it much easier to pay attention to regular everyday stuff. Regular things will seem more interesting to you, to the point where you might, for instance, actually go get a book on a subject, and sit down and fucking read the thing for entertainment, and learn something along the way.

This will never be a message you hear from any kind of mainstream media, because it involves cutting down on your consumption. But if you can do it, your chances of rocking at life should be significantly increased.

tl;dr. Eat right, exercise, take perscription meds but don't expect them to entirely solve the problem, and quit/minimize video games, TV, and other instant-gratification entertainment.
