Ice Water & Metabolism Anonymous
I read recently that drinking cold water will often times slow down metabolism therefore it's not good to drink it after a workout.

I've been a heavy soda drinker for a long time and while I'm content with drinking fruit juice or any other flavored substitute. Water seems to be the best option. I'm trying to transition from my flavor addiction to just plain water.

What does /fit/ think about iced water as opposed to sodas, fruit juice, etc...
>> Anonymous
iced water is better... obviously
>> Anonymous
That's the most nitpickiest fucking thing I have ever heard.

I agree it's a bit nitpicking but I'm just wondering if drinking iced water will cause more issues with weight loss than flavored substitutes and if there are any that's not going to affect my dieting.

Do you seriously think it will have a noticeable impact on your workout? If the answer is yes you should consider going back to school. Even if it is true, the fact that you drink ice cold water forces your body to regulate its temperature meaning you burn an estimated 11 calories negates any impact it has on your metabolism.

tl;dr - Enjoy ice cold water, its good shit.

This.

Animal metabolism is extremely inefficient, and a ton of our energy is lost to heat. When you use your own body heat for anything, you're just harnessing some of that energy that would otherwise be lost.

I'd say the difference between ice water and room temperature is negligible.

I just went for a run. Drinking room temperature water would have hydrated me, but drinking ice water also helped me cool down (fucking Georgia heat goddamn).

Then again, sometimes room temperature water is easier to put down than ice water.

Water>Soda.

Is the temperature going to effect your metabolism? Sure, but the effect is so negligible that it's not even worth considering.

As a vetenarian, I can tell you that horses are forbidden from drinking ice cold water after a run because the dramatic temperature change makes them sick. Then again, the horses of today are sterioid-hopped freaky huge things with lots of muscle mass that lose heat fast.

I suspect that you wouldn't feel well and you would get a cramp in your stomach if you drank a large amount of ice cold water. Why can't you just do with vaguely cool water?

Water will always be better than soda regardless

Are there any alternatives? We know that Soda and certain Fruit Juices are packed with HFCS and Sugar, what about things to add to water to make it more bearable.

I used to put some lime or lemons into water, but after a while it takes it's toll on your stomach.

Ice cold water tastes more refreshing imo after a workout.

its because your body can only absorb water that is at 70 degress ferinheight. So if you drink ice cold water your body has to spend a shit ton of energy heating it up to absorb it. Tahts why it slows your metabolism down. it has to spend time to heat the water when it could be doing other things.

I prefer room-temperature over cool, and cool over cold
because if I'm thirsty I'm going to drink something with the intention of replenishing lost fluids, not 'cooling down' while remaining dehydrated as fuck because I can't consume the rest of my beverage without further aggravating the migraine-nerve on the roof of my mouth/sensitive teeth.

Whenever I see a hot/thirsty person sip on less than 3-oz of ice water and stop, I secretly wince, knowing the damage their probably doing to their desert-dry kidneys.

All that being said, everything is better than soda, and if he needs a little flavor try lemon or lime in the water or diluted juice/gatorade. Or man up and drink it down cuz it's good for you.

Op here, thanks for the great input.

So alternatives:
1)Gatorade
2)Man-up and drink lukewarm water
3)lime in water

Desert peoples add honey to their water.

Hi OP, I've never drank soda but I was addicted to fruit juice to the point that it impacted my teeth. I've just now started to transition into water. Here's things that help:

-Use Dixie cups and take "shots" of water in between sets.
-Drink bottled "flavored" waters that have 0 calories. I really like some of these, they can be fairly delicious with no guilt involved.
-Drink through a straw as you do cardio. I bought a cheap weight watcher's water bottle as it's fairly big and has a tough ass straw to drink out of; you can get down a lot of water fast this way without thinking about the taste.

Hope this helps :D

ice water is the yummiest shit ever

What?

Scurvy comes from having a vitamin C deficiency... putting lemon in water wouldn't cause that...

Milk, have you heard of it?

It's much than water after a workout. Tastes a hundred times better too.

Um 16oz if ice water will actually burn about 25-30 calories (drinking 32oz will not double this, it's due to the energy needed for your body to regulate internal body temp)

>>what about things to add to water to make it more bearable.

why the fuck are the so many trolls on /fit/ these days?
>> Anonymous
I remember reading somewhere that if you drink some ridiculous amount of ice cold water (around 10 litres), that the energy used heating it to body temp, is around the same as a 30 minute jogging session.

Yes and you die from either water intoxication or hypothermia. Nice going dipshit.

Drinking 10 litres of ice cold water would burn 370 calories.

being dead would negate the benefit

Yes i saw it perfectly well. My point is its not even feasable due to the damage you would do so why theorise about something that people are dumb enough to do? (see anorexia, bulimia, women for examples)

Jesus Christ stop fucking crying. All I was doing is pointing out a (potentially) interesting fact, if somebody is stupid enough to think drinking that much water is a good idea, fuck 'em.

Besides, if you drink 4 litres a day thats about 150 calories anyway. Not insignificant, and not a dangerous amount of water.

I will usually get a 2 litre bottle and fill it up with tap water and a tiny tiny amount of diluting orange (don't know if it's called the same thing in the US) so it's got a really small amount of flavour to it. I'll leave it in the fridge overnight so it's nice and cold.

It's my little reward after I've done my round of in between rounds on the bag. Motivates me more than just plain water.

Yeah, try Propel. I think it's just the right mix of fruity taste and water. And drinking water TOO cold just after a hot workout can be a shock to your system.

Also, I love cock. :)
