you don't have to use wrists for front squats, you can always use arms crossed over. but i used hands and my wrists hurt for ~200 reps until they stopped hurting.

Also, for most athletes, front squats aren't that great, because most athletes have an imbalance in their quads and hamstrings, due to most sports being more focused on using you quads.

Front Squat: Quad dominant. Less balance/less weight used. Form is enforced by the movement itself.

Back Squat: Stable as fuck/higher weight used. Form must be enforced by the trainee.

QUAD involvement is the SAME in both the BACK squat and FRONT squat for squats of equivalent depth. its the muscles of the hip/adductors that vary in recruitment based on form.

this was proved in a study done at ball state, the one caveat being that all squats were done to a box set at the same height. So if you take a front squat to full depth (like in picture) i would imagine a bit more increased quad recruitment % vs. cutting it for a 14inch box.
