sup /fit/ - I want to take up jogging, but I'm not sure where to begin. I need a decent pair of shoes to run in, and the usual clothes - looking for suggestions.

I just had a death in the family of heart failure, and it sort of freaked me out. My dad didn't really exercise or anything, so I'm a little spooked - I'm only 23 years younger than he was...

I'm 6'0", 250lbs, my first goal right now is around 200lbs. I'll aim a little lower once I get there.

Any tips? I live just on the edge of town, so I should be able to just jog up and down the back roads around here. Summer's just starting, so I really want to put some effort into this. I'd love to be one of those people that consider running a 'hobby'.

Jogging at 250lb is going to hurt like hell. Seriously you will fall apart after 2 weeks is my bet. Buy a cross trainer, less pressure on your joints.

Just do it.

Start with walking.

and sorry for your loss, btw.

at 250 lbs, biking or swimming would be a better choice for your joints.. you really don't want to have fucked up knees when you're older.

First of all, my condolences about the death in your family; I'm sorry for your loss.

At 250lbs, I wouldn't recommend jogging or running, as it would likely be harmful to your knees. I would either ride a bike or swim (low or no impact activities). Once you get down closer to a healthy body-weight, then you might consider running.

Of course, eating healthy is important as well.

Good luck.

This is a good suggestion. Start running after you drop off a good chunk of the initial weight. Otherwise, you may injure yourself and be less likely to keep with your program.
