Running and the like only raise your metabolism for about 6 hours, which is effective, but should you go a long period where you cannot do these excercises, such as an injury, you'll be paying for it. Though cardio does raise your resting metabloic rate, it doesn't by much, and a supplemental muscular workout would help, even if it is just 10 or 15 push-ups/sit-ups here and there.
