"Cutting back all the calories" or cutting back to many calories will leave you with little or no energy to preform well in the gym, not to mention you will be drained for the rest of the day. If you want to loose weight effectively you can try eating about 13 calories per lb of body fat you have. So if you weigh 100 lbs, then eat about 1,300 calories per day. This way you can lose about 1 lb per week, still have enough energy through out the day, and you wont loose muscle due to an extreme cut of calories.
