ive been lurking here for a while, and basically thought cutting my calories would be the fastest and best way to lose my weight. however, i have hit that 'plateau' that i hear about. is my body in starvation mode? ive been the same weight (and look the same in the mirror) for comming on three weeks. ive been eating good, with minimal cheat days. is there some way to break the plateau? is there a trick? or am doing it wrong. ive been eating lots of salads, veggies, and meat. is it that i just need to excesize more? or is there some scientific reason i was doing well, then hit a plateau while doing the same routines

More info please. Height, weight, daily calories, exercise routine, how long have you been doing it?

You don't need to exercise more, you just need to shake things up a bit. If you've been doing the same thing then your body is probably just used to the routine.

My advice would be to alternate strength training and cardio days. Maybe try some new classes at the gym or play a new sport. Go hard some days, go softer on others. Don't let your body predict whats coming next.

6'4, 265 (was 285, lost the 20 very quickly). i dont count my calories specifically, but its around 1500-2000 (on non cheat days). before i got my job a month ago i was working out 3 days a week-ish, with 30 minutes of cardio and weight lifting. since work (an active on my feet job) ive lost motivation to work out, so thats my only excercise. been doing all of this for about 2 months, any other questions?

Try actually counting them specifically for a week. You may be eating more than you think.

If your body is adjusting, mix it up. Eat 3000 calories one day and 2000 the next few days. Your body will adjust eventually to whatever you do so keep it guessing.

is there another way to break plateaus? from what ive read, plateau's are the mortal enemy of people trying to lose fat. it means that your body slows its metabolism to a grinding halt. this sounds like i must be doing something wrong if my metabolism grinds to a halt. in Venuto's book he says that reducing calories is bad, and working out is the better way to reduce calories as opposed to eating less/healthier. is it that im not working out at the gym 5 days a week? or is it possible to lose fat purely on a diet and regular active work activity? i dont want to harm myself further or gain more fat that i need by stopping my metabolism, what do you think?

Yes, but you need to eat just the right amount. Basal metabolic rate - 500 calories should be a good place to start.

when i lurked here origionally, i was told 1000. my BMR is 2600ish (website calculators contradict eachother). so i was aiming for 500 calories a meal, as best i could.

Venuto says that because there's two ways to cut calories.

1) lower food intake, which is BAD in starvation mode. your body already thinks its starving, giving it less foods/nutrients is just going to make it lower your metabolism more by eating your lean muscles.

2) increase exercise. increasing exercise burns more calories, creates a deficit. he's not saying doing a shit-ton more exercise, but increase it enough (intensity, intervals) without sacrificing the nutrients your body needs.
