hey /fit/
my little brother is obese, at age 13 he weighs in at 220 lbs and is 27% body fat. He is huge like XBAWKS. Anyways, summer is coming to a close and he is still fat as ever. He wants to change, but keeps telling me he can't do it by himself. I was fortunate enough to be born with a good body, I make good choices when I eat, and very physically active. He said he will only work out if I go with him. I promised him that I will. Anyways, for a 13 year old, is it fine for him to lift weights or will it stunt (sp?) his growth? I will force him to do HIIT until he is dieing, I will set him up on a strict diet and for fuck sake make him lose as much weight before he goes to high school. I don't want him to suffer because he is my little brother and I care for him. Anyways, should I force him to eat the foods that I eat and workout until he pukes and lift weights? or should I make him workout in moderations and take it slow while he is still growing?

Pic related. Me hugging my little brother.

I wouldn't recommend lifting weights just yet. Young teens should stick with body weight exercises only, since strength training can stunt their growth.

Get the whole family involved. Empty your cabinets and agree which foods are healthy and which aren't. Go on a family trip to the supermarket and find better foods.

While 220 doesn't sound like a whole lot, on a 13 year old's frame he can bust up his knees quick. Good old manual labor will really get him sweating. Wait until he's under 200 before you start the HIIT

Thanks for the input anon.
My brother lives in a very sedentary lifestyle, he rarely goes outside, has no friends to play with and in general is very depressed (he even told me that he wanted to kill himself).
I think ill probably put him on a bike for a bit until like you said
>Wait until he's under 200 before you start the HIIT
Ill make sure he will be able to start running without hurting himself.
The diet part is going to be a killer though, my mom buys the food in our family, and buys a lot of junk food almost every time she goes shopping. She is extremely huge. I tell her to stop buying this shit, but she says "everything is good in moderation", as I can tell that is bullshit because she is still fucking fat after eating her food in moderations. I stopped eating what she bought and food that she made after I got my first job and was able to afford food for myself. I think the only way I can start my little brother to eat healthy is by paying for the both of us -.-

fucking problem with Americans is they think "moderation" means "one or two junk foods a day" when it really means something like "one or two junk foods a week"

I doubt he will be able to do HIIT at all, or at least correctly. And if he does, screwing up the cartilage in his knees to the point where he will have knee problems for the rest of his life is not worth losing some weight.

I went from 200 lb to 140 lb when I was 14, and I did so from making a calorie deficit and first walking for 45 minutes, and eventually increased my speed to the point where I was simply jogging five to six mph. I did this everyday, but you can probably just do it five days a week. The hardest part will be the eating, though. May sure the deficit you put him on isn't too low, since he's young and needs the calories, and make sure he's getting enough protein. I wouldn't suggest lifting for him yet, except body weight exercises like pull ups or something. Though, at his current weight, I doubt he'll be able to do even one.

Do it for your brother, you'll turn his life around.
