Critique my diet! Anonymous
I'm female 5'4" and 180 pounds. Shit sucks, but my weight's decreasing. Fat loss is my main goal, though muscles are awesome too. Here's what I ate so far. I haven't eaten dinner yet, though--I'm stuck home between semesters, so I have little control over that outside portions. Cookie was a momentary lapse in judgment that WILL NOT happen again. Should I add/drop anything besides that?

No really, if you want to lose weight, then simply stop eating "important" meals. I am 20, 5f 11", 28" waistline with ample muscle for my frame. It simply is the easiest and cheapest way of losing weight. The only problem is that nobody ever accepts it because they can't accept that they have missed such a blatantly obvious way of losing weight. If you are overweight you eat too much. If you can't lose weight then you have too much time on your hands to think about being hungry, you have little to no exersize which is a sad mental epidemic of recent years, or possibly you have a condition of sorts which is of course the easy excuse for being overweight.

A) You aren't eating enough calories by a long shot. This is going to result in starvation based weight loss which will likely cause disgusting deflated balloon skin.

B) You are eating SHIT processed foods like instant oatmeal, cookies and couscous (on par with instant white rice in my book) for a large amount of what little calories you're taking in.

I know you say the cookies were a lapse in judgement, and that's fine if you eat one or two every now and then, but don't be eating crap like instant oatmeal for breakfast every day unless it's sugar free.

Add: More seafood, not just canned tuna (seriously, when will you people learn how vast the seafood world is and it's ALL healthy as shit provided it isn't breaded and fried), green and orange vegetables, low GI fruits (basically no bananas or apples), small portions of nuts (I suggest pecans), a high fiber cereal that is low in sugar, low calorie whole wheat bread, small portions of beans (NOT shitty canned baked beans...PLEASE do not think these are a healthy source of legumes), sweet potatoes or butternut squash as a replacement for white potatoes, chick peas (if you have a food processor, throw in chick peas with a bunch of vegetables and turn it into a mash and then form a patty and bake it for about 15 minutes for a deliciously simple veggie burger), multivitamins and a calcium supplement, and throw in five hours of cardio per week (I don't care HOW you get it, brisk walking, jogging, HIIT, swimming, cycling, soft ball, whatever, just DO it).

Also, if your parents bring the groceries into the house, start going with them and picking out what you need, but I'm assuming you're old enough to shop for yourself. Hope this is helpful, and stop starving yourself with the sub-1000 calorie per day shit.

Although, I do agree that a lot of the women who come here are idiots. But the way I see it, is that they'll either fail and kill themselves or learn from their mistakes. Either way, they'll hopefully not remain idiots for very long.

OP here. The egg was "fried" but there wasn't anything added besides a tiny spot of extra virgin olive oil to keep it from sticking. I don't know what else to call cracking the thing into a pan? It shouldn't be much worse than boiling it, unless pans do something weird.

The oatmeal's "sugar-reduced." I agree that it's shit but I have to eat it until it's gone. :( Afterward I'm switching to the old fashioned kind. Couscous was leftovers, usually I eat a chicken breast or a pita w/a little bit of hummus.

I definitely eat more than 1000 calories a day! I know starving's far from healthy; I'm not trying to be skinny, I'm trying to get in shape. I readily admit that most girls I've seen trying to lose weight are acting like idiots. Unfortunately I'm stuck compensating during the day for dinner, which I'm obligated to eat with my family. It's good, wholesome food, but not for someone trying to reduce like I am. And I've already tried sitting at the table with something different, but it hurt Mom's feelings. I'm only at home for the summer, so I plan on starting the 5-6 meal plan as soon as I hit campus.

As for cardio, I try to get 45 minutes to an hour every weekday and when I can on the weekends around work. I'm either on a stationary bike on the highest resistance level at "15-20 mph" or on a mountain bike circling a hilly park. When I actually got to the gym at school I was knocking out 60-80 minutes on the elliptical, but I didn't go nearly enough. My leg strength and endurance is damn good compared to many of my skinny-fat friends, but I still have a long long way to go. Let's just say I'm looking forward to squats. :)

What kind of calorie counting program is that, or where did you find it?

Also, I don't know much about diet, but what I've been doing is making a meal normally, then cutting it right in half, eating half first, then the other half about 3 hours later, I've heard it drives up metabolism.

Also, if I get hungry, I'll drink water eat a bagged salad or something like a bag of chips, or baby carrots or things like that. I've heard that you can eat pretty much anything green (vegetables) and not have to worry about it. Good luck!

By like a bag of chips, I mean eating a bagged salad as if it were a bag of chips, after I read it again sounded kind of ambiguous. Best thing to do is fill your time with something so you don't get bored enough to eat, that's my biggest problem.
