The thinking behind pre-breakfast cardio is that it burns nothing but body fat and it cranks up your metabolism before eating breakfast.
Remember, though, that most ideas like that are for min/maxing only. For your average joe, just getting out there and running is what you should aim for. And the "stomach will cramp if you are active too soon after eating" thing is a myth. The truth is that activity diverts blood from your digestive system, so the food just sits there and can start to rot. However, if you can chunder down some food and hit the bricks immediately after without vomming up all of your food, then go for it. A good wait is 30 minutes, though, unless you just ate 2lbs of pasta or something ;)
