Hey /fit/

I've started doing the beginner strength program II (5X5) but I don't have a squat rack. While I can still do squats I can only do them with a lighter weight with more reps. If I were to try with a heavier weight I might injure myself when I deadlift it off the ground, on to my chest and then on to my shoulders.

Long story short, is it a suitable substitute to do more reps at a lower weight than the heavy 5X5 approach? If so, how many reps + sets should I stick to doing?
