Hi /fit/. Female college student here. I'm well within a healthy weight range, but in terrible shape. I tend to eat more when I'm stressed out, and as it's midterm time right now I've noticed that I seem to be gaining a little weight. It really frustrates me and it's negatively impacting my self-esteem.

Obviously the solution is to start exercising and try to eat better, but the difficulty with that is that it's really easy to convince myself that I have neither the energy nor the time to fit an exercise routine into my schedule. My question to you is, how do you go about motivating yourself to blow past your lazy excuses and just exercise?

actually, what you probably need more is sleep.

This is definitely true. I've been trying to get more sleep at night this past week or so and it seems to he helping. Supposedly exercising also helps to improve the quality of your sleep at night, so getting into the habit of exercising would really be killing two birds with one stone.

for me, it's a combination of these three things:

#1 look in mirror and say "OH FUCK YOU'RE A GOB OF FAT YOU FUCKING FAILURE"

#2 God gave me a brain and a body. I've spent 25 years honing my brain to a high level. I'd be remiss if I failed to do the same with my body.

#3 It's a shame for a man to never know the wonder his body can achieve.

Walk around in nothing but your underwear every time you're in your own home, especially when eating. It won't help your self-esteem, in fact it'll do the opposite, but it'll help your physique.

The obvious solution is to stop being an emotional eater. It makes no sense to do that, but then again, you're a female.

If you don't have motivation on your own to exercise, then that's too bad. Congratulations on being destined to be fat.

Since you're a girl,

1.) take a pic of yourself in a bikini

2.) print it out

3.) Put it on a wall, or a drawer, and everytime you don't want to exercise, look at your picture.

Of course, that always works if you don't like the way you look in a bikini....if you do...then uh...

The sad fact is that some of us actually don't have the self-control to be healthy on our own. It's terrible, but it's true. Some of us needs to get kickstarted.

This is the solution for people like us. It's not like we need to leech off of other's mental strength, it's just that other people makes us good. Good even at things we're not naturally good at, like self-motivation and self-control.

So get a workout buddy. Trust me. It's the only thing that really actually works. /fit/ can sit on their high and mighty horse as much as they want, but if you don't have the self-control, don't try to magically summon it up from within, because it isn't there, period. Instead, utilise your ability to keep promises to other people as a placeholder, *that* works.

You'll find that not only will you have the resources to show up at the gym, put the twinkie back on the shelf, but you'll also push yourself that little bit harder during your workouts.

finding a workout partner really helps for me
