Here's what I think

The reason /fit/ is in love with HIIT is because it is easy for fat people. It's vague, all it says is do it "As hard as you can" then take it easy then go "As hard as you can."

But "as hard as you can" means different things to different people. So everyone can do HIIT and feel like they did it right, even if they sucked the big one.

Unlike say plain running, when your fatass has to come to terms with the fact that you suck.

Also the "it improves your metabolism" makes them feel good about sitting around on their ass all day.

What do you think /fit/ are your fellow anons rationalizing their shitty workouts by calling them HIIT?

Hard as you can is kind of arbitrary. You can push yourself a lot harder if you set specific goals. If I set myself the goal of doing 50 pushups in a set, I won't stop until I've done them. If I wasn't counting and just going "as hard as I can" I would probably give up before 40.

in HIIT, as far as I'm accustomed to, the only rest between exercises is how long it takes you to set up the next exercise. Preferably running to that exercise if you're at the gym, to keep your heart rate up(what I do)

Example, the "300" workout...

25 chin-ups
50 deadlifts
50 box jumps
50 pushups
50 kettle bell swings
50 floor wipers
25 chin ups

That's not "what is says" at all. HIIT is a kind of exercising just like weightlifting. Within this you have specific programs, like 5x5 for weightlifting or tabatha intervals for HIIT. These programs determine a plan for all kinds of details from frequency to heartrate to diet with good reasons supporting those ideas.

It's not vague at all.

Also, for your michael phelps example, he's an olympic swimmer. He needed to do a lot of swimming, to, you know, be a better swimmer.

The army doesn't do it because their training is supposed to be long distance running, so as to get their soldiers in good shape for long distance traveling ( I assume, their training blows anyways, probably more for mental toughness than anything).

Let's say you have two guys

one is fit
the other isn't
lets say they are both around 5 10 and weigh 160 lbs.

They both do their HIIT run for the day. One guy runs three times as fast as the other guy. So at the end of their 15 minutes of powering out. He has run 3 miles while the other guy has run 1.

What's the difference? No one on /fit/ knows. At all.

I mean sure, during the running the guy who ran 3x as far burned about 3x as many calories. But as far as how the inner mysticism of increased metabolism and super speed gains might be effected. Who the hell knows? Does the second guy's resting metabolism go up higher than the first guys? Maybe? How much higher? Fuck if I know. Fuck if you know.

Is 15 minutes really the ideal length? How does a 30 minute HIIT workout compare? You don't fucking know.

All /fit/ knows is it found some obscure training method that promises that they only have to run 15 minutes and magically everything will be better and they lapped it the fuck up without giving it any serious scrutiny.

If you're doing HIIT for 30 minutes you're doing it completely wrong, you should be pushing yourself until lactic acid is preventing you from going any further. If you're not a mouthbreather you know when you're pushing yourself to max intensity.

Sure, one guy has 3x the aerobic capacity of another, but they're both getting a greater benefit out of high-intensity than if they were both doing steady state at their own pace.

As a swimmer myself, i know that national- and international-level swimmers spend a considerable amount of time in the pool doing the equivalent of aqua-HIIT or whatever the fuck you wanna call it.

I would argue that most of their time in the pool is spent doing some kind of 85-90% effort swimming (consider race speed to be 100%).

There is a reason these guys eat 12,000 calories worth of food in a day. It's because they CAN go very, very VERY HARD for longer periods of time, and do it with nearly perfect technique too.

...Which isn't HIIT. Sprinting nonstop or virtually nonstop until you pass out. Then resting than doing it again is not HIIT. HIIT would be looking at 50-65% of your time going all out and the remainder going at a more relaxed pace.

There are a hell of lot more ways to train than just "endurance" or "HIIT" and none of you faggots know what Michael Phelps does. So cut the crap. Yes, Im sure he sprints sometimes. Hell, Im sure hes at least tried HIIT. but whether or not he does HIIT on any kind of regular basis is blind speculation and you know it.

You obviously haven't researched HIIT much, and I don't know if you're trolling or not. The goal of HIIT is to get up to 80+% of your max heart rate and then down to 40-60% of your max heart rate. If you get up to 85% by light jogging (because you're really out of shape), then you're starting out correct. If you can get your heart rate back down, then you're doing HIIT. It's not just 'go fast then go slow at these exact intervals.' Doing the same intervals and exercises negates the purposes, too, since it's main point is throwing something at your body that it won't expect and will take excess calories to burn and fix. Cardio is for making your body efficient. HIIT makes your body consume a lot of calories. It doesn't "improve your metabolism" in the sense you mean it... you just use more calories because your body is not efficient.

I suggest researching it beyond what /fit/ says.
