The Rippetoe workout has you alternating between workouts of squats, deadlifting, benchpressing, and workouts of squats, military pressing, and pendlay rows for 3x5 setsXreps for as heavy a load as you can handle and increasing it by 2.5% each week.

I am guessing this is for gaining strength, like the title saiys, and gaining mass.
If I want to gain muscle definition instead of mass (think runner's body instead of weightlifter's body) how should I be altering the weight, rep and set limits.

Also, what exercises should I add/take away from the routine?

Either do 5x3 heaviest load, or develop a bodyweight workout plan. Bulk and cut cycle for either for best results. Weights will always make you bigger if you keep increasing the weight, bodyweight exercises will make you bigger up to a point, then just refine what you have. Cardio will cut away the fat and let all your muscles show.

The "runner's body" is useless for anything but running long distances, and then dying of a heart attack.

The way to get it is to just run.

Don't alter shit, just make sure you eat assloads of clean food and you won't have to worry about a runner's body, you'll have a big ripped one. Clean food indicates low in BAD fats, not low in fat at all.

I hope you mean "Olympic 100m sprinter" by "runner," since if you mean any other sort of runner's body, I don't know why the hell you'd be doing such a program as good as Starting Strength.

What gym is that in the attached pic? I approve of it greatly.

It's hilarious how the marathon started... In ~500BC, a Greek messenger ran 26 miles from the Battle of Marathon to Athens to tell the Athenians they won. He then collapsed and died.

So, of course, it only makes sense to commemorate that event by repeating it.
