so, I just started running, and I've come across a few issues.
apparantly I have horrible form, my feet slam into the ground, there's no fluidity to it.
also, after only a few minutes of even mild jogging, my side hurts like a bitch
and when I'm done running, I feel like I'm overheating and about to vomit.
So, can anyone explain what the side pains are about, how to reduce or eliminate them? Also, will the urge to vomit go away as I run more?
>> Anonymous
Don't eat or drink anything 3 hours before you go running, if you do need to drink something, water. The side pains are because you have bad form and the food/drink in your stomach is moving around. If you run right when you get up on an empty stomach, you won't feel it. Once you get good you will be able to make it less painful by keeping your back straight and stomach tight.

The side pain is because you're not breathing properly. Try to breath every 2 steps. If you get the pain in your left side, breath out every other time your left foot hits the ground, vice versa if its on the right side.

To learn to run fluidly, try running barefoot on grass. This will pretty much force you to run with good form, because otherwise it hurts. Be VERY VERY careful with this, start out slowly, only do it a couple of times a week at most, and for very short periods of time, until you're ligaments and tendons are strong enough to handle it.

probably a stupid question, but how do I get good form?
Should I watch others run and emulate? Is there a particular form I should be consciously trying to keep while I'm running?

COMMON MISCONCEPTION:

YOU NEED TO RUN TO BE FIT

PROTIP:
YOU NEED TO BE FIT TO RUN

(i hope this will somehow be memed, so i dont have to keep typing this...)

Common truth: you're fucking retarded.
>> Anonymous
>>358054
then what would be a good way for one to get fit enough to start running?
>> Anonymous
Why do people run? It's not fun and it has a massive injury risk.

fucking saged

hey fuck you, why sage a thread for a dumbshit response?
>> Anonymous
>>358056

from an general population, orthopedic POV, how is this possibly retarded?

throw in the fact that most /fit/ers are NOT natural athletes with backgrounds in running sports, and likely many of them are overweight in the 1st place....

"jogging" lays up more people through injury in the US than any other sport combined. funny thing is, there isnt much of a health benefit either, in terms of CVD versus general pop (LDL, HDL, CRP, etc) as "running" is a very inflammatory exercise...and what do you think CVD is a disease of (inflammation), except that, and i quote the head of the ACSM "runners dont get diabetes"
>> Anonymous
>>358110
so better to be skinny and inflamed or fat and diabetic?
>> Anonymous
because "jogging" or "the couch" are the only 2 options? way to advance the dialogue.

and yes, i'm a firm believer in the adage:

"be fit and see the orthopedic surgeon when you're 50, otherwise, the cutting will be getting done by the cardiac surgeon"

Not OP, but I'm just wondering. When you run and your sides hurt, does that mean that your sides are getting the best of your workout or what? What is the cause and effect of your sides hurting when you run?
>> Theodore Roosevelt !!J8LZ2zthmwi
>>358149
lawl
no, its when your internal organs pull downward on your diaphragm.

Well, you can definetly fuck yourself up running, but when it's done smartly, I don't see a problem.

Unfit people can get fit running, they just have to be careful until their body is fully ready to run.

So ummm, best thing to do is just run through the pain?
>> Anonymous
>>358167
lol to that loaded question
>> Theodore Roosevelt !!J8LZ2zthmwi
>>358167
best thing to do is breathe properly like i fucking said earlier.
>> Anonymous
Not the OP, but I've the same problems (and I'm flat-footed so I really feel the shock of running in my lower back whenever my foot lands on the ground).

I'm thinking swimming is probably a safer way to get in shape than running. It's one of the few exercises I'd call enjoyable, too.

op here,
my problem with swimming is that it requires me to actually hop in my car and get to a pool.
running I can just toss on my shoes and go to the park next door.

>>358193
I personally don't swim because I'm fugly under the shirt.

>>358185
that's because you're landing on your heel, fucktard.

endurance runner here
>apparantly I have horrible form, my feet slam into the ground, there's no fluidity to it.
try to run as silently as possible, imagine that you are ninja or whatever works for ya brah
>also, after only a few minutes of even mild jogging, my side hurts like a bitch
do not eat anything heavy before run, you can eat stuff like rice 30-60 minutes before run(depends on metabolism). and breathe properly, i personaly do 2 steps breathe in, 2 steps breathe out
>and when I'm done running, I feel like I'm overheating and about to vomit
stop drinking/eating shit and it will go in a while

to all you who says here that running is somehow bad for you: go fuck yourself with a stick you illiterate dumbfucks

Also not OP.

I have recently started running (not fast, but faster than a jog). I go up and down a steep hill for around 30 minutes every morning at 4:00. I've been doing this for about a couple of weeks and I really do see an improvement.

However two things don't improve... chest pains and shitty form. How do i fix this?

Also, I'm aiming for endurance running in the 4-5 mile range. Any tips?

>any tips?

Good luck.

Do running shoes make any difference? I was thinking of picking some up because I don't have a pair.
>> Anonymous
either better shoes, better form or you are not fit enough to run.
>> Anonymous
>>358336
yes
>> Anonymous
>>358354

How much of a difference?
>> Anonymous
>>358358

Honestly? Not that big of a difference...

Somehow, nobody gives a thought to just plain old walking. Fat people just decide its a great idea to go from not moving to running their asses off and not thinking for a moment that the amount of weight they have on them and the sudden activity could pose as a serious problem later on. You should ease yourself into running by first walking, and then when you're sure you won't have a heart attack after just 3 miles, you should be good to go.

yeah right..

better shoes --> better amortization --> less pressure on foot, shin and knees
