listen up, this will significantly help your acne. less is more. stop putting creams and other crap on your face. stop using that bullshit acne cleanser, it makes your skin worse. I had real bad acne and horrible skin that seemed to be really dry and tight yet extremely oily at the same time. I tried every OTC product and a few stupid things from a derm that kind of worked but just irritated my skin.

Rules:
1. Don't ever wash your face in the shower. It's too hot and will mess up your skin.
2. Rinse your face with lukewarm water in the sink, morning and night. The idea being to remove surface oil, not to suck all the natural oils out of your skin. I often wash my hands mid face wash b/c the oil builds up on my hands.

3. When your face is flaky use clean fingers and just lightly rub your skin to remove flakes, then pat with water.

4. Don't ever pop a pimple, just leave it. Your body will fight the infection and it will look less red in a day or two, and the shit blocking the pore will be pushed out within a week. If you pop it, it'll look like shit for at least twice as long.

by the way, I've been doing this for 2 years. A few times over the past years I've tried going back to face washes. Each time without fail I would start breaking out again.

Man I've suffered with acne for over 8 years trying different shit like clearsil and similar crap. Basically you may want to first check what type of acne you have (mine was something-vulgaris) but if nothings helping get Accutane ASAP. All it takes is a blood work test and a doctors prescription. That stuff has worked for me where nothing else really did. After about 2 and a half weeks your lips and face will probably dry out like crazy but after that you'll be so fucking glad you used it. Probably one of the best decisions I've made.

I myself used to have severe acne, I tried a bunch of creams that didn't do jack. I was on acutane for a while but didn't finish it.. I've been using pro active ever since..

Acutane helped a ton but proactive really hasn't helped with the little bit of acne I have left.. I mean it's to the point where I don't really mind it but getting my face completely clear would be rather nice. wdf @ acne.org, does that shit work? why doesn't he exfloliate or anything? ;x

acne.org doesn't help, his whole thing is rubbing 30$ of benzoyl peroxide into your skin a week & washing with a gentle cleanser.

body chemistry varies from person to person. it's just not that simple. oily/dry skin, soriasis, allergies, ingrown hairs, etc.

quick method to find what works on your skin chemistry:
use 1 so-called acne cure on the left side of your face (benzoil proxide, say) and another on the right side (salycilic acid)
keep track of effects and progress, on a piece of paper or take a picture of yourself with a camera daily
see which works better on your face.

that way you can collect the advice you get, try the alternatives, and see what really gives you good results.

This may seem a bit strange, but it worked for me. I bought some cheap van der hagen shaving soap and brush. I used it to clean my face 3 times a day and used some benzoil peroxide.

When I started I was going through a seriously bad breakout. I saw serious improvement in under a week. My acne is almost gone now, about a month later.

This is what I do
morning- shower wash face with soap, lightly scrub if acne isn't serious, take tetracycline w/ breakfast (i'm using 500 mg, but start of with 250)
after school/whatever- use salicylic acid and take tetracycline with dinner
before sleep, wash face, but on benzoyl peroxide on trouble spots

Accutane is a great choice for severe acne.

If that's not the route you want to take then every morning and evening:

-Wash with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide (I use AcneFree)
-Use alcohol free witch hazel toner (Thayer's is the brand I use. You can get it from Whole Foods)
-Moisturize with a non-comedeogenic lotion (I use cetaphil)

I've been on accutane twice. Each time it worked wonders, then my acne came back 6 months after my course. This face wash routine has cleared my skin up from moderate to mile acne in 1-2 months. I'm optimistic that I'll be acne free within 2 months, but we'll see.

Also:
-Wash your pillow case regularly (every week or two)
-Use Head and Shoulders oily hair shampoo and no conditioner (trust me)
-Wash your hands throughout the day and avoid touching your face
-For me personally, milk and high amounts of refined sugar can cause me to breakout.

do research on the possible long term side-effects of accutane. apparently, if you're unlucky, it can cause permanent damage. i was this close to taking it after proactive and all this other bullshit didn't work. i agree with the guy that said something about checking out what kind of acne you have. skin type is also important.

also some general rules to follow:
-don't touch your face. hands are the dirtiest part of the body. especially don't scratch with fingernails. bacteria accumulates under them. if you have to scratch your face, use a rough cloth or your shirt or something.

-drink assloads of water. keep a water bottle with you at all times and sip constantly. refill when it empties and repeat. cut sodas and all that other bullshit

-don't lay your face down on a table or anything. maybe this is just paranoid behavior that i picked up from being acne-scarred throughout high school. but as far as i can tell, every little bit helps.

-don't over-wash. i think this has already been said. oils are essential to maintaining your face's natural chemistry. removing oil that's supposed to be there will cause your body to react by producing more oil because your face is like 'holy shit, someone took all my oil. make more!'

-i sleep on my face a lot. it was suggested to me that i change my pillowcase every other night. and on nights i don't change it, i flip it to use the un-slept-on side. i did this while doing lots of other things that helped my face, so i can't attest to its effectiveness with complete certainty, but again, why not. i'm sure some bacteria and facial oil and shit build up on it.

-finding the right soap also helps. there was a time when i couldn't put the tip of my pinky on my face without touching zit, but now my face is clear, even though it is still oily and retains some scarring. but to get this way, i didn't use those systems that involve 4 steps, with lotions, apricot exfoliating rubs, alchohol pads and all that other shit. i eventually found this soap and using it once a day totally works.

keep in mind when trying new products that there won't be any quick fixes. stay with each one for a while. i've heard from possibly pseudo-scientific sources that some soaps bring all the pimples to the surface before it gets rid of them. again, i don't know how true this is, but if it is, a soap that could potentially work might have been over-looked because the skin got worse before it had a chance to get better.

good luck, pimply anon. there is hope. there were times when i didn't want to go to school because my acne was so bad, but now my skin is pretty good.

and for the love of god, research anything that requires bloodwork. it requires bloodwork so that doctors can make sure its not fucking you up. i wouldn't want to be potentially fucked up
