I want to buy some free weights so I can get started with working out to build up my body and strength and I'm looking for some tips on what to get and what exercises to do.

He's not in bad shape, but if you work out at all it shouldn't be hard to look better than him. My diagnoses.

-Your routine sucks
-your diet sucks
-you've only been working out for a few months
-you're lazy and don't work out that hard when you do work out

Mix and match those until correct.

(at comfortable weight)
squats (with weighs)
dumbells just go through various excercises
and stomach crunches for abs
that is jsut for muscles
for cardio go bike riding or running that or circuit training

I agree with 8 reps, but 2 sets, really? 3 Should be a minimum, 4 is what I go for.
