There is, but they only actually use the real swords in competitions. And they are HEAVILY armored and you're only alowed to hit these heavily armored spots.
I saw it at my regional martial arts competiton and I thought it was pretty plain and boring compared to some of the closer combat arts. Unsure to what it's called

A fair number of Kendoka work with boken now and again to get the feel for it but that's about it.

Koryu Kenjutsu, old-school sword fighting is done with real swords on occasion although bokken are more common. This is the real nuts-and-bolts how-do-I-kill-the-guy technique.

It's really interesting but nearly impossible to learn outside of Japan. (and even then it takes some doing.)
I think there's a guy teaching it in San Diego but that's the only one I'm aware of in the entire U.S. You'd really have to dig pretty hard to find a teacher and they can be pretty picky.

Your best bet is Iaido which uses a blunt sword and covers most of the theory of technique. It's mostly one-man katas; though some schools like the Toyama-ryu do really cool shit like test cutting (cutting rolled up mats in half.)

FYI not the best exercise, though fun. :)

kendo isn't going to really get you in shape or strong.

my roommate took kendo and he would always brag that if he had a stick he could whoop me. one time we tried it.

i just fucking charged at him and grabbed the stick out of his hands. i think his problem was that he was 5"3, asian, and 95lbs. i could have pressed him over my head for reps

and the fact that he had a stick instead of a sword, in which case you'd be missing fingers :)
