Is self-improvement a purely egotistical pursuit?

YES.

Is there any human behavior that isn't selfish at its core?

NO.

Self improvement is masturbation.

With that out of the way no. I'm personally doing it so I don't end up like most of my mothers side of the family (predisposition for heart attacks + bad diet is not good kids) or my father who is just a fatass.

Am I happy with how I look? Not quite yet but am I doing it purely for my ego? Nope I'm doing it so I don't die when I hit 35 like a lot of my family.

Depends on the extent, really.

Not being a disgusting, lazy slob = no, that's taking care of yourself.
curlz 4 t3h gurlz = result of media manipulation
IMMA BE SO MUCH BETTER THAN ALL Y'ALL AND MY BOD IS MY DEFINING PERSONALITY TRAIT = ego

egotistical pursuit? mostly, but not purely. I think it's mostly about looking and of course feeling good. However, staying fit is good for one's health and well being, which is an important aspect as well.

Altruistic behavior? It's kind of the definition of the word.

Why does it even matter, OP?

When it comes down to it, ANYTHING beneficial to one's own existence could be deemed an egotistical pursuit, from buying a Wii for pleasure to defending yourself from a murderer.

Besides, who better to be concerned with yourself _than_ yourself?

It is a bit of both. When I was a fatty I always thought of myself as better than other fat people. The rest of the world just didn't agree.

Now that i'm fit everyone else sees it too.

It can be argued that it is also a moral pursuit because by improving yourself you are becoming more helpful and less of a drain on society - but is that really why people do it?

Fucking pansy.
Only Corgis are the only dog you don't lose hormones over for calling cute, simply because of sheer cute.

true altruism doesnt exist because of self-satisfaction

And the definition of a fairy is some pixie with wings. Just because something has a definition doesn't mean it exists.

I don't think there has ever been nor will there ever be a true altruist. Philanthropes, sure.

So do you guys think true altruism exists? Can it exist alongside evolution and natural selection? I mean Darwin himself seemed to think that certain actions that had no benefit for the individual but success for the group was passed on.

Dawkins has some good explanations for the evolutionary origins of altruism in The God Delusion.

It can be seen as, for example, an outgrowth of a cost-benefit analysis (only a little bad for me, but very good for my genetically-related group) or as a form of 'peacocking' i.e. "check me out ladies, i can afford to give my own food to others because i'm a superior hunter' etc.

truth probably won't be known until we invent time maching imo

Nope, it only is if you drag others down on your way up.
