Hey /fit/ how healthy/unhealthy is sushi? I ate it for dinner yesterday, but can't really find the nutrition info online. Is it fattening or is it as healthy as it tastes? I didn't get a kind that was deep fried or anything weird, just sort of a generic spicy sushi and a blue crab sushi.

Also today for dinner I had a shrimp salad on crackers. Healthy or unhealthy?

Just asking cause I generally eat fruit, veggies, or something with the nutrition info on the back.

Both the sushi and the shrimp salad were made fresh at the grocery store in the fresh deli section.

It's not unhealthy persay, but it's not awesome. There's a little bit of protein from the fish, but it's pretty much just carbs and sugar.

The sushi you get from grocery stores tend to be loaded with preservatives and cooked with butters and creams, so those are pretty bad.

Any other sushi, it really depends on what type it is, but generally sushi is pretty good for you. Don't worry about the carb content too much, because if you're working out, you'll be okay.

As for the salad, the most unhealthy thing would be the crackers, but even still that's not much to worry about.

ok awesome, thanks for the info.
and the sushi wasn't premade with preservatives and packaged or anything, the grocery store I went to actually has a little japanese man that is making it fresh right there. It was the coolest thing ever. After putting the sushi in my basket, he looked up and goes "sanku bery much!" with a big smile, it made me feel good all over.
Ok got off trail a bit there, just meant to say that the sushi wasn't prepackaged.

just buy a fish from a grocery store and cook it. Thats 10x healthier.

Also avoid fish higher up on the food chain as they tend to have more mercury.

If you want to go out, a jap restaurant is your best choice. You can try sashimi instead of sushi, it's just fish. I would add an order of tuna maki or sushi (two or four pieces) to add some carbs. Too bad they use white rice bit nothing is perfect (except for oatmeal)

as high on the food chain predators tuna and salmon are loaded with the worst heavy metals and toxins

Sushi is pretty healthy, unless you're eating say, cream cheese rolls or 100 pieces.

It's mostly fish (usually raw), rice, seaweed, and sometimes vegetables, all of which are pretty good for you. Unless you're dieting to lose weight, the white rice isn't even worth mentioning. If you have a dozen pieces, it'll probably be less calories than your average dinner.

Who cares? Mercury is the sweetest of the transition metals.

next time go for sashimi instead of sushi. Just good cuts of raw fish. Of course eating raw fish can be dangerous if not properly stored/prepared/served... but other than that... the fish itself is very good. Lean source of protein, fatty acids, omega-3 (good for your brain, etc...)
