I don't even consider it smuggling, the availability of everything I needed was there. At first I used a handmade guitar string mag with coils taken from a walkman, but later on as I made a few extra dollars I was able to buy an actual Starr mag, with a whole set of needles.
Ink was just as easy to get, I was not in a FMSP so there was no urea/rubber mixing going on.
A solid artist is always needed, and as I was one of few, it was easy to make money. And when I mean money, I mean cigarettes, clothes, moonshine alcohol, lighters, watches, extra blankets and pillows, meal chits for weeks, etc.
When it comes to gang-tattoos, I've been contacted several times by federal agents as far as what I know about certain symbols, work, acronyms, etc.
I was incredibly lucky as I tattooed more cons, more cons gave me respect, and there were a few heavy hitters there who I tattooed that were cons you should know if you needed something.
