Yeah. There are still plenty of jobs that require such strength. Or failing that, it's just a useful trait to have in emergencies. Plus, the training that leads to it also does alot to improve general health and sometimes appearance.

If I'm going to bust my ass 5/6 days a week, I want some useful strength to show for it.

I won't bag on a guy who works out to look good, but to me, it doesn't seem all that clever. Especially when you can get functional fucking fit and look amazing at the same time.

I'm a baggage handler for US in PHX. I basically get paid to work out.

In the summertime temperatures on the ramp can reach 150 degrees F. Four flights a shift loading and unloading bags, mail and cargo in that can shape a person in six weeks, if they can hang, that is.

There's not a lot of mass to be gained since the job is more conducive to a high number repetitions at a fixed weight (average bag is calculated to weigh 40 lbs). What one gets though is tone and definition with the fat loss.

I work with some cats that look pretty scrawny but they got the muscle tone of steel cable and are very strong for their size, so underneath they're actually pretty chiseled and all just from work...

Also, functional strength doesn't mean you can't hit up the freeweights.

Go for metcon stuff, stuff that builds great strength with olympic lifts and great endurance and agility with crosstraining.

You can have the best of both worlds; actual power and look good in your birthday suit power.

Depends on how much functional strength you want.

Do you want to break deadlift records? Some people never stop working out for pure, practical strength... power lifters for example don't give two shits about aesthetics where power is concerned.

Most people though yeh, get to a point and decide to maintain or "polish" what they have. I'll keep on adding more weight to the barbell until I reach my plateau, and then maintain it.
