Measuring body fat %? Anonymous
Sup /fit/, are body fat scales a good and accurate way to measure body fat percentage? I got a set of digital accumeasure calipers to try and do skinfold testing, but everytime I do it I get different readings. Also, I have trouble actually grasping any folds of skin...I guess my skin is fairly tight on my body. I'll keep working with these to see if I can get more consistency out of them or figure out how to measure right, but in the meantime I wanted to see if there are some other good alternatives.

Are body fat scales a good and accurate way? And if so, what is a good set of scales that doesn't cost huge amounts of money?

Also, will the scales account for bone density? I have reason to suspect that I have extremely dense bones.

No they fucking suck ass. Get a real doctor to do it once every two months or something.

From what I've heard, they're pretty terrible. My dad is a family physician and we have some body fat calipers laying around. You just take some measurements, look at a chart, and bam: There's your body fat. It's pretty simple.

They suck.

For about 5 bucks you can make your own body fat calculator. Buy a scale and a measuring tape, then use the YMCA equation.

Yeah I have one, it sucks. It tells me I have like 10% body fat, which can't be true. Unless I just have a lot of untone muscle or something. I'm not fat, but not really skinny either

But I don't get it. I've used my calipers and I always get different measurements. I don't see how they can be accurate.

For one, how do you know exactly how big of a fold to grab? And secondly, how do you know how tightly to pinch the calipers? Obviously you would get a different measurement depending on how tightly you squeezed...

those aren't accurate either. Google Hydrostatic Weighing.

either you have a shitty doctor or you're a jackass who doesn't believe in using their services

ask your doctor and he'd gladly do this (unless he is a shitty doctor... if he refuses to or doesn't know how consider changing docs)
