locking your joints!

I was told by an instructor that when doing military presses (which he also said was wrong, he explained that a military press was basically a front press) not to lock the elbows to protect them.

any truth to this?

Question about overhead presses and exercises where you put the weight over your head. If you drop it, wouldn't you die? Leik, if it falls on your head/neck/spine or something.
