I thought about getting some of these, you know, to work my hands and upper arms.

But then I figured, it's probably a waste of time. Did I do the right thing /fit/ ?

Yup.

depends

USING ONE RIGHT NOW

Just fap more and alternate hands. My handshake brings fools to their knees..

You know what's the best thing for forearm strength?

Deadlifts.

Seriously. Picking heavy shit up will do more for your forearms than those contraptions
>> Anonymous
If you're going to buy one of those things, at least buy one that has a lot of resistance, like Captains of Crush. Regular hand grippers don't have enough resistance and any 90 pound girl can rep them out.
>> Anonymous
What's this fancy piece of shit? I use a small mammal's jaw bone to work my forearms.
>> Anonymous
If you buy high quality ones with good resistance then they can be decent enough (not for your upper arms though, just lower).

But they are kinda obsolete. As anon said, lifting heavy weights will increase strength/size of lower arm muscles too. If you wan't something to isolate the muscles, try wrist curls or cable rollers.

>(not for your upper arms though, just lower).

Yeah, i'm a douche. I meant lower, no idea why i said upper though.
>> sasuke !h003Xy2vOk
They're only good if you buy really high resistance ones. You shouldn't be able to do even 1 rep the first time you buy them.

Otherwise, do deadlifts, chinups, bar hanging or pinching plates. Pinching plates. Pinching plates.
>> Anonymous
actually, they do work your upper arms and delts. just stick your arm out, put your opposite hand on the should, and make a fist as hard as you can.

finger pinching strength and hand pinching strength are 2 different beasts

there are 6 different 'grip strength' modalities, only 1 of which is 'supporting grip strength' (ie. holding onto squat bar/chin bar)...and when you start getting good, there is very little carryover between the different modalities.

example.

i can overhand grip (ie. normal grip) 425lbs, demonstrating relatively decent supporting strength, but my best blob (big sized) is only 45lb (1 hand) and i can only close a 2.5 Captain o Crush.

read strongman stuff if you want to get better info. there's a huge subculture of just 'grip' artists (if you will).

captain of crusher, buy it.
Gripfaq.com will tell you about the types of grip you need to develop.

oops mean crush but someone said everything that needed to be said, the pansy grippers in OP are shit and worthless except for really unnecessary endurance practice.

>I can only close a 2.5 Captain o Crush

That's actually good

its all relative

my training partners @ university (phds in math) had sub800lb DLs and almost had the 4 closed, big almost...and could do farmers for 50yds w/300 per

>>316549
has anyone under 6'6" closed that damn thing? How tall are your pals btw?
>> a
>>316549
built like O-linemen, 6' and 5'9. that have desirable hand build, but proportionally too small, ergo, bad leverages for gripping compared to the big guys (the WSM guys)

my hands are bigger, but spindly, like Miss Haversham's willowly hands. lacking meats
>> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan
>>316549

So... you're not good because someone else is even better?

Also, for grip training, 'almost' closing isn't really relevant. It's supposed to get harder as you get closer. If your pal can close a CoC number 4, he's either into grip training something fierce, or a superhuman freak of nature.
>> Anonymous
I wonder if there will ever be a 4.5
>> Anonymous
>>316576
i said its relative, i'm nothing special, most guys who train serious can do the same.

/fit/ has lower standards than most lifting boards.

YOU have never competed in any NAS strongman competitions

I have.

>>316571
Do you chalk up and warm up pre workout with the CoC. I can do CoC 1 with ease casually(not a big achievement I know) when do you think I should aim for 2 and at what point does it become a whole body bend over grip fest.

>>316587
those who are serious w/grip have a 'grip day' in their splits
example of a 4day split
upper, lower, grip, strongman event day.
>> Anonymous
>>316588
ah cool thanks, I thought I was being a bit too casual about it.When I get strong enough to buy 2 I'll try to use it more sensibly to get better returns.

I DO A 5X5 ON THE 3.5
>> Anonymous
>>316599
its 5x5 or bust

its the /fit/ moto

to the other guy.
while you are still a grip weeny, just use'em in yor spare time (between masturbating, trolling, and pooping in mom's basement)

the split i gave was a COMPETITVE strongman's split

get a metolius simulator board and cry as you won't be able to hang on the middle deadhang with both hands for more than 15 seconds

Ivanko Super Gripper
it's adjustable and more springs can be added

this
also indoor/outdoor bouldering is amazing for your forearms and finger grip! Look into it, it's also pretty fun when you get into it.
>> Anonymous
>>317303
it's a training board for climbers
but you can also use it for grip strength and endurance

i'm a climber so that's why I know about it

Metal ones tend to break quickly. There are some nice rubber ones that will last you longer.
>> Anonymous
some days i can close coc 2 and somedays i can't even get th 1.5
what the fuck is up with that
>> Anonymous
>>317491
Fore arm muscles recover very slowly. If you go to failure, your fore arm is likely to be weak for a a good 4 days at the very least.
>> Anonymous
>>317493
thanks, that explains a lot
i always assumed that forearms are like calves and that they recover very fast
