New/fit/fag here.
Recently, I've become -very- interested in the world of cycling. This has come from the high prices of gas forcing me to ride my dad's old 10-speed everywhere. It's been helping me out quite a bit physically and financially. Not only that, but I believe I could go into a small, local tour next year if I wanted. I biked 36 miles one night on a whim, by the time I got back, I felt as if I could do it again without any -real- strain. Although I wasn't going a constant 25mph, I think if I had the right bike, I could eventually get into the sport.

So tell me, /fit/, how do I get into it? How do I get a sponsor or the attention of one? How should I train towards a small tour or race?

Pic slightly related. That's a Sakai 1000, mine is a 2000; straight handle bars.

turn your dads old bike into a fixie, sell on craigslist to some hipster, buy a new 10speed with said money

Basically, the way it works is you star of as a Category 5 racer...after 10 mass start races, you get promoted to Cat 4, from which point on you need to win or place in races to get points which you need to upgrade to lower categories. Cat 3 is intermediate, Cat's 1/2 Semi Pro/Pro.

That should help you find a local club, and your states cycling association should have a calender of races and such.

If you do decide to race, be prepared to train a fuckton.
