My brother wants to start lifting weights. I think the main reason is because he's pretty chubby and thinks being strong will redeem himself.
Whatever works for him right?
I was considering giving him my old set of free weights, but I told my friend at the gym about him starting and he was a little weary on the subject, and that starting at his age (15) could have unwanted effects in the future e.g. stunted growth, muscle deterioration.
I wanted a second opinion as I'd like to help my brother out. What is /fit/'s opinion?

Let him workout. As long as he's hit puberty, he's good. I don't think it would even stunt his growth even if he's in/hasn't hit puberty. I started working out in 7th grade and I didn't hit puberty until the end of Freshman year. That may have been a side effect, but whatever. I'm about 5'11'' now, and that is taller than anyone in the closest 2 generations of my family.

The stunted growth and all that is bullshit.I started working out intentionally at 7 and ended up taller than my dad by 13,so my growth wasnt stunted that bad.And hormones at that age are almost like a weak steroid cycle,so it's probably best to start as early as possible

in high school i found that the more people exercised the taller/bigger they became.

and muscle deteriorating is yet another excuse made by people who are too lazy to exercise

Speaking of puberty and stuff, when do men usually stop growing, in terms of height? I turned 18 recently, and haven't grown an inch since I was 14 or 15 (5' 6"). Am I fucked?

15 is a great time for your brother to star lifting
his hormone levels will be very high for the next 5 years or so, almost like he was taking steroids
proper form + basic freeweight exercises + chinups + food + food + time = beast

As previously mentioned most things you hear about kids exercising is BS, it's a lot safer for kids to lift weights than play contact sports, in fact lifting weights promotes growth

OP, don't listen to these guys. Seriously. Most of the people on /fit/ have no idea what they are talking about. If you want a second opinion, ask an expert about it - /fit/ is not the place.

The stunted growth may not be bullshit. I started at 15 and now I'm built like a dwarf. My father is 5 inches above me and my little sister is only an inch under me.

Actually, building up muscles is a good way to lose weight.
