I'm somewhat surprised to see that there are so many people here struggling with overweight rather than those with problems similar to mine.

That's right, I'm a skinny motherfucker( Pic is me ), skinny to the point where it has become a social problem. I've got easily visible ribs, stick arms and bones showing up here and there. My spine looks really nasty, especially when I crouch.

I've "worked" for two years now to free myself from this Gollum-like appearance of mine. I quit my hobbies( Which included soccer and Han Moo Do, a half-assed martial art ), started eating shit food like chocolate and potato chips on an almost daily basis( I also ate and still eat three whole meals daily, sometimes even four ). I've spent almost every day for the last two years now in front of the monitor. On an average, I sit on my ass at least 10 hours a day. So far, my eating habits have given me nothing but an acne. Out of my friend's request, I started going to the gym about two months ago( 40-minute sessions, two times a week )and had visible abs after like... Three visits. Because there was not much fat on my belly to begin with. But, I kind of like these little abs on my skeleton body, so going to the gym is something I'm not going to stop doing.

Since there are a plenty of fat guys here( And those who used to be fat ), I figured this'd be a good place to ask for advice.

i have the same problem i weighed 8 stone a couple of years ago at 5'8" and i've been in the same situation as you EXACTLY and it took me a few years of research to get myself sorted so I'll save you the time and tell you what you need to know.

Eating more food will not help you, at best you will get fat which you do not want, you probably wont put on fat anyway because your body will not store excess calories as fat it will instead burn them off generating heat. So eating all that junk food will just make you sweaty and gross.

You need to eat slightly more calories than you need so aim just above 3,000 and lift weights. Do 2 workouts upper body and lower body, you can still do your martial arts to stay fit because it is good for you. being fit is better for you than looking fit.

Your workouts need to be progressive resistance to build up your strength. If you are getting strong you are getting bigger, track your progress and aim to lift more or get that extra rep or three in each week.
do 3 sets, one easy warm up and two heavy or 8-12 reps. work with a weight till you can do the 2 sets of 12 then increase it and drop back to 8.

This worked for me and I put on 45lbs in 2 years

Dumb advice.

I am skinny and still working on gaining weight and I can assure you since his body seems to want to be skinny like it is, he probably won't have a problem with becoming a "muscle head" anytime within the next four to five years probably or till around age 30 when maybe his metabolism might start slowing down, but even then I doubt it.

OP: 40 minutes each for two times a week isn't much at all.
For me I have two different types of workouts that I rotate doing when I go to the gym.
Workout 1 is focused on lower body and shoulders.
Workout 2 is focused on arms and chest.
Both workouts are various different exercises for different target muscles and are 3 sets of 10 (sometimes less than 10 but no less than 6).
I usually do Workout 1 Monday, rest/cardio Tuesday, Workout 2 Wednesday, rest/cardio Thursday, Workout 1 Friday, rest/cardio Saturday Workout 2 Sunday, Workout 1 Monday then so on.

Each workout takes about an hour to an hour and a half. (I work out alone, btw.)

Stop eating junk food and soda. I only drink green/lemon tea, gatorade, and water at the moment. By the way, I hate water and think it tastes gross but to help drink it I put some lemon juice in it and it goes down much easier.

Get on a stricter workout plan and as you begin to notice that your shoulders, arms, chest, and legs feel and look stronger you will want to keep working out.

tl;dr Work out more with a better work out plan and stop eating crap and replace it with fruits,vegetables, and nuts and other protein snacks like beef jerky etc. The longer you are at the more results you will see and the more you will want to keep working out. So do not quit.

Go look up nutrionist info, you look to be an extremely ectomorphic person. You're going to need a decent, balanced diet to put on weight... actual protein and calories, with lots and lots of vegetables and fruit.

I'd look to put on a good deal of muscle mass if I were you, its going to be hard work... but it is possible.

Here are some general tips:

-Eat 2,500 to 3,000 calories a day, spread over 5 meals a day. Breakfast should have the most calories out of any meal.
-Don't just eat junk food. There are good fats and bad fats, and good sugars and bad sugars. Too much info to write about now but research online.
-Keep your cardio simple. Maybe once or twice a week, half-hour sessions of moderate jogging or elliptical, AFTER you've lifted weights, never before.

I know my workout times aren't impressive, I've tried to keep them simple and quick for a reason. I'm actually a bit afraid that going to the gym will burn what little fat I have left faster than replace it with muscle, eventually making my situation worse. Oh, and I also go to the gym alone... OP you're an ectomorph which means you have a very fast metabolism which burns everything you eat, that's why you need to eat more often than a "normal" person and lift weights

Eat, eat, eat, eat as often as possible, even if you don't feel really hungry, don't eat junk food, you can gain weight without it

You should have like 6-7 small meals a day and never feel hungry, breakfast and the last meal just before you got to sleep are very important

Thanks for all the replies, everyone; I think I've gotten a much better view of the situation.

While the thought of gaining muscle instead of fat is intriguing, I kind of wanted to hurry up with this process; Summer vacation's here, my parents are going to be absent six days a week, I'll become the owner of the house; Perfect chance to finally get laid. I don't just stand there; I hardly stop to catch my breath. It's just the fact that there's barely anything to occupy your thoughts except counting the moves, which certainly isn't the case in studying. Working out is like standing in an empty room for me. I can deal with the boredom and usually squeeze those extra 20 minutes, but shit still sucks. It's hard to maintain a motivation when the progress is so slow.

Fat people didn't get fat over night. They got fat by learning terrible eating habits at a young age. Like people who had busy single mothers who did nothing but bring home fast food almost daily for years.

The only time people gain massive amounts of weight quickly is when they have rare thyroid conditions like Hashimoto's Disease. The only time people LOSE massive amounts of weight quickly is when they have the willpower/mental disorder to go on Dachau style crash diets for months.

It takes 3,500 unburned calories to cause a one pound gain in body fat. If you start eating a lot, you're going to need to do it for a long time. Years. If you go on a fatty's McDonald's diet, you'll still probably only gain like 20-30 pounds per year and it won't be muscle.

If you want muscle. You need to work for it. For years. For life. If you don't feel like you can make a total lifestyle overhaul, just stay thin. There's no miracle answer to weight loss or weight gain. It's EARNED through work, like everything in life.

The biggest myth I hate seeing thrown around these forums is that skinny people can get huge by slurping down double quarter pounders and dozen boxes of doughnuts. The massive influx of calories might help you gain muscle with workouts, but it's going to be that bulky ugly muscle that is covered with fat. I really doubt most people on /fit/ want to go around looking like fucking linebackers who make love to Chinese buffets.

that condition sucks, when i started getting serious about gaining weight i was 6 ft and 160 lbs at 22 years old and on top of a decent diet i took in like 2000 calories of weight gain shakes. i cycled those for like a year and a bit with no real big gains, then it was like a switch turned off and i shot up to 205 and now i have to be careful not to eat all the shit food i used to. point is: diet right, add a gainer and wait it out, sooner or later your metabolism will slow down.

tips:
after weight lifting, eat protein within the hour. if you wait any longer, your body starts burning up your muscle because it doesnt have a protein source, (and it can't store protein, so it has to break down your muscle, OR you have to supply your body with it by eating more!)


and by protein i mean, EAT LOTS OF IT!
ex: eggs, dairy- (milk cheeses), red meats (though, i would go for white meats for a healthier option---poultry products are white, not pork), all sorts of nuts, legumes, avacadoes, tofu.

eating nuts and avacadoes are high in calories, that should help you get to 3000 if you're having trouble.

be sure to drink at least 2 liters of water a day.

Here are the basics
5-6 meals a day
1.-2 grams of protein per lbs of bodyweight
about 1.2 grams of COMPLEX carbs per G of protein.
Eat fast acting carbs and fast acting protein after your workout.
STAY away from doing machines all day.

I don't think you would want to gain fat, i think your looking to gain muscle, I would reccomend doing this, what ever you weigh multiply that by 20 for example 200lbs x 20 = 4000 thats how many calories a day you should have, also what ever you weigh have that many grams of protien a day, example 200lbs = 200g of protien. Hit the gym 4 times a week and if you can do cardio every day day 1 do chest and tri's, day 2 do legs, day 3 do bi's and back, day 4 do shoulders. You'll be gaining weight in no time.

Dude I know your pain, I am 6'4'' and when I go to the gym the women are buffer then me. Lately I have been slacking but I started the gym like six months ago and I have gained I think 10lbs....I am now 160ish. And eating junk food and sitting infront of the computer wont help. You need to take in more calories then you burn off. So lets sya you intake 3000 calories and you burn 5000 youll loose weight so you need higher heathy calorie foods. For example, peanutbutter, ground beef. I eat mcdonalds every day, LOL. and I basically jsut force myself to finnish my meals....so I would say just keep at it, eat more, go buy some whey protien powder from wal-mart too. And good luck
