Zoloft. My mom is on it. What's your take?

SSRIs work by 'correcting' chemical imbalances. Without the ability to test for whether or not an imbalance even exists in the first place, and without accurately measuring patients' neurotransmitter levels to allow for continuous monitoring during treatment, it is impossible to know if one is correctly targeting a deficient neurotransmitter (i.e. correcting an imbalance), reaching a desirable level, or even introducing too much of a particular neurotransmitter. Thus it has been argued that SSRIs can actually cause chemical imbalances and abnormal brain states.

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine on a possible publication bias regarding the efficacy of SSRI medications in the treatment of depression suggests that their effectiveness and risk-benefit ratios may be greatly exaggerated. Of 74 studies registered with the United States FDA, 37 with positive results were published in academic journals, while 22 studies with negative results were not published and 11 with negative results were published in a way that conveyed a positive outcome (one positive study was not published and three negative studies were published with results that were portrayed as negative). Overall, 94% of studies actually published were positive outcomes; when published and unpublished studies were included for analysis, the percentage of positive outcomes was 51%.

Tell her to stop fucking taking that shit. Doctors try desperately to shove it down the throats of EVERYONE with ANY kind of problem. It's completely fucking ridiculous.

seconded. after five years of off and on treatment, and trying four different antidepressants, I'm just as crazy as I ever was a year after being weaned from my last prescription. the only way to fix depression/mental problems is to develop healthy coping mechanisms and possibly therapy(or a good friend to talk shit out with on occasion).

This is all 99% of the ridiculous portion of our population who takes antidepressants needs.

There's a difference between clinical depression and regular depression. If you feel depressed because you have a shitty life, that's natural. You're supposed to feel shitty if you have a shitty life, it provides incentive to get your fat tits off the couch and stop being such a pathetic loser. Anti-depressants like zoloft don't work on this kind of depression because there is no chemical imbalance to be corrected. It's your body's natural response, and any increase in mood felt while taking them is a complete and total placebo effect. Now, I do believe that there is a small group of people who actually do have a chemical imbalance. They have every reason to be happy and they still are depressed because of a physiological reason that can be treated with drugs. Granted, I have never met a person like this, but I still believe that they exist.

Basically, depression in a clinical sense is chronically over diagnosed because psychiatrists either can't tell the difference between clinical and natural depression, or they like sucking Pfizer's dick too much to stop prescribing pills every time someone steps into their office. Something tells me it's the later.

My ex was on it. She was batshit insane. Then she was off it, and only somewhat insane. Then she was on Zoloft, Lithium and something else at the same time and created an entire new level of insane.

i've been on a million fucking antidepressants and i think spending all of my teen years going to psychiatrists and therapists and being told something was wrong with me screwed me over more than anything else.

anyway, zoloft was not for me. prozac helped me get on my feet so i could sort my shit out. i was on it for about 8 months and then weaned myself off. been doing dandy ever since.

OP here. Good god guys, I'm scared. Does this mean I have a major shitstorm coming my way?

She's on Zoloft? Yeah... prepare to run as far away from her as you possibly can. Shit is gonna go down.

I've been on every kind of antidepressant that you can think of and, for me, they've never really helped. Well, they would work for awhile and then my body would adjust to them and I'd either have to up the dose or mix it with another drug. Plus, they can have horrible withdrawal symptoms if you're thinking of weening off of them.

dude all anti-depressants, are for shit. i used to take paxil, forced by doctor, and i was a fukin maniac. i slowly took myself off and i was back to normal. just have your mom ween herself off of the zoloft. and change her diet. like if there is anything she is allergic to, get her off of it. and red meat also has an affect on peoples behavior, maybe she could try taking a break off the meat and see how she feels. oh you could try liquid fish oil. it is good for mental balance. you can also get it in capsule form, cuz some people dont like the idea of "drinking fish". :P

no dude im not going to give you a detailed example of how to ween yourself off of anti-depressants. but if you know what your are doing, it works. im sure that there are "lists of things to do" on the internet you could find and follow. but as someone who has doe it before, its really the best thing to do.
