A few questions concerning accutane, /fit/. I'm tired of having acne, I'm a freshman in college now and it should be gone. It's debilitating and has destroyed by confidence. I have tried everything else to no avail.

First, I lift weights, and I have heard it can cause joint pain. Would accutane cause a lot of trouble in conjunction with my routine (starting strength)?

Also, I am a bit concerned about the initial breakouts which I heard can be horrendous. I fear that I would begin to break out so terribly that I would become even worse mentally. How common are the initial breakouts? How severe are they usually?

I could care less about the liver problems if my skin becomes clear, likewise with dry skin. I just need to get rid of this shit, I want to live a normal life like I did before it raped my face.

I'm with the other responder, I don't remember having a particularly bad breakout after I started the treatment, but probably because I had lived with terrible acne for so long anyway. I wouldn't be concerned about the mental effects of a bad breakout after starting. It definitely does work.

Not sure what you are, but on the off-chance you're a chick, I also recommend the birth control pill. Accutane took care of *most* my acne, but I found later after a blood test that my remaining acne was caused by outrageously unbalanced hormone levels. Started on the pill and now I only have stress-induced breakouts.

(same guy from before BTW)
BTW, I completely understand this feeling. I still have a little bit of acne even after accutane (mild-moderate I suppose) and I hate having to look at it. With that said, your dermatologist should have you on monthly blood tests that should all but eliminate the possibility of liver or brain complications.

never took it.

however, i've heard HORRIBLE things about this drug.

Honestly, read up on it. I've met people who's lives have been ruined by it. But do research dude. legitimate honest research and talk to your doctor thoroughly and bring up every concern you have.

I've heard the horrible things too, but I feel that most of the described side effects are due to complications--an existing mental problem, for example, contributing heavily to the kid that killed himself while on Accutane.

I was a bit emo while taking it, but I contribute that wholly to just typical high school emotions. The only side-effect I did experience significantly was dry skin/lips. Used Carmex to keep my lips moisturized and Cetaphil for my skin.

They monitor everything from blood tests to how you're feeling mentally monthly nowadays. You would have to TRY to overdose in order to get most of the negative side effects.

LOL ACCUTANE CAUSES SUICIDE!
No. You know what causes suicide? Years of feeling disgusting every time you look in a mirror, go outside, or can feel the painful acne on your face.

The dry skin sucks a lot of dick, I even got mild eczema on my last month or two of treatment. But if I had to do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat.

OP here, that's exactly how I feel. I can't look at myself straight in the eyes in a mirror. I can't look at other people in the eye. When you've gone through this kind of irritation, stress, and pain, you're willing to take extremes to be normal again. It makes me laugh when people bitch about a single pimple on their skin or dryness. Who cares?

I think that the depression and suicide that occurs during accutane is because of MORE acne and skin problems (some people react adversely to it I've read). I am much more likely to kill myself than someone without acne because of acne (but the chance is still remote)

If I sound angsty, then there's another side effect of acne for you

I've been thinking about taking this too. My appointment with a dermatologist isn't until the November 15th though.. So still some time to consider, and then see what their opinion is.

Doesn't sound like I have it as bad as a few in this thread, but it is definitely a problem. I have it pretty bad on my chin, but every where else is pretty clear.

Only concern is that it's going into the winter time, and my hands are already starting to dry out. If I don't daily put lotion on the they will get extremely dry and cracked. That's without any medication.

So going on accutane may really fuck them up, and my lips.

And if the initial breakout is really bad, that may fuck me over big time.

I've had a change of heart here, I don't think it's the best idea. It sounds like it will only exacerbate my acne and then it will take months to clear up everything. I'm looking for a quick solution.

You would rather have a quick solution that will bring back your acne quick too? Or go through 6 months of utter hell to have clear skin for at least twice that long? (Though, I've heard it lasts at least 2 years...and in some cases, 'cures' it completely)

Yes. I think that if I can clear up my acne with some BP, I can keep it away with consistency and better habits. I really wouldn't be able to cope with the damage it does to your skin (dryness, redness, breakouts) before it actually clears it up.
