High Intensity Interval Training.

Works on the theory that your body is smart (pretty true).

Essentially, with traditional cardio you're supposedly conditioning your body to use oxygen as efficiently as possible. Problem being, dense muscle tissue uses more oxygen. This puts your body into a catabolic state, where it consumes your muscle to reduce strain on your cardiovascular system (over time, of course.)

HIIT is designed to stress your cv system in short, intense bursts. This is supposed to make your body condition itself to perform at peak capacity, thus building denser tissue as it can generate the most energy in the shortest amount of time. Also, because of the intense nature of this burst, it is also supposed to increase the bodies ability to recover from the sudden dip in oxygen more quickly.

tl:dr, supposed to be better than traditional cardio if you want to have more muscle mass rather than be just lean
