No shit they're mind altering, Mr. Cruise. Depressed minds need to be altered because they have serotonin imbalances. These imbalances are sometimes unavoidable from birth, but are often caused over time due to over issues. A lot of depressed people start off "shy", which is more a personality trait than anything, but it snowballs into low self-esteem, second guessing and paranoia, which ends up causing whacked out serotonin levels, which results in a depressed nervous system.
Drugs often do not mask the problem. The reality is that drugs correct the problem for a certain period of time such that your body naturally adapts to the new hormone levels in your brain and begins producing them itself in normal levels.
Drugs are more like a cast, not a mask. You put a cast on a broken limb to keep it together better and eventually it heals and you take off the cast. Same applies to chemical imbalances in the brain.
People who think "Oh, if I get on drugs for my depression, I'll just be depressed again when I stop taking them!" have no idea how this stuff works. You take the drugs for a certain period of time before stopping. If you stop early, yeah, you will resume being depressed, just like if you take an armsplint off early you will resume being in a lot of pain.
