Hey /fit/, I got a quick question. I want to be in better shape. I wanna basically just reduce my over all body fat a little bit, have more stamina, and be a little stronger to boot. Nothing ridiculous, but just overall "more fit". Would joining a boxing gym and boxing as a hobby help me overall? Most exercises involve lots of running or just punching in general. Lots of work on balance and fine tuning certain things, so I figure it would probably be pretty good if I didn't try to "bulk up" so to speak. Any thoughts? Pic semi-related.

Well, I never asked about what exercises I should do; I simply inquired about the effectiveness of a particular set of exercises.>>108988has NOTHING that answers my question.

he'S right. you say you want to take up boxing, then you need plyometrics and cardio. you need quick movements in boxing.

Nah man, he just wants to punch wildly for 10 seconds before he collapses on his fat ass.

You will never survive a sparring match if you can't fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee.

Again, I'm not too intersted in being a pro boxer. I'm interested in how boxing as a HOBBY will help me become more fit over all. Jesus.

joining a boxing gym will be better for general fitness than just about anything else you can do, and it will be fun to boot. I doubt you'll face much pressure to compete if you don't want to, but you should be prepared to work really hard when you're in the gym if you want to meet your goals

Go for it, but take my advice:

Strengthen your shins. Search 'shin splints exercise' on the internet. Skipping is great but it can kill your shins. And when they say to just work through it, ignore them.

As a matter of fact boxing fitness is great because it's tough but it has a lot of 'fitness voodoo' associated with it. Just tell the instructor you have a fragile body and there are some exercises you'll just bow out of. They won't say anything because they'd rather you not be injured in their facilities.

Other than that have fun!
