Dear /fit/

I'm about to start taking Paroxetine (Paxil/Aropax). For the first ~2 weeks I'll be taking half a 20mg tablet each morning to hopefully deal with my depression/anxiety.

I was wondering whether I any advice or knowledge could be offered on how it will make me feel, and the side effects (such as, are there any frequently experienced side effects as opposed to getting a few random ones).

Your body will get used to them and you will want more and more because it's not giving you the desired effect.

I took citalopram (another SSRI) for a few months. Total sex drive failure, sleeping 12+ hours a day, general zombified feeling. Worst drug I've tried.

Trip on psychedelics, they'll probably give you a renewed positive outlook on life, even though (or probably because) you usually only have to take them once. Long-term chemical solutions for depression are never solutions because your brain always adapts to them and ends up how it was before, only now you've got zombie side effects to deal with as well.

Go read trip reports on erowid.com if you don't think a single dose of psychedelics can turn a person's life around.

What the hell. My mother was on 40mg, grandma on 50mg. My ex was on 20mg and I was on 150mg twice a day.

Although I feel awkward doing it, I second this statement.

Mental health is also acceptable, I'd reckon.

Why awkward?

Anyone know what psychedelics i should try?

I always suggest to try physical exercise before taking pills. When there's more people taking antidepressants than people doing exercise in a country there's a problem.

If you were inclined to do so, I always recommend shrooms to someone just starting out with hallucinogens. The length of the trip is manageable (a few hours), and tends to have more of a spiritual/entheogenic high to it than most other tryptamines, which is very useful for breaking through a depressive slump. LSD is a lot longer, more of a mindfuck, can be too intense for a first-timer. Don't even think about trying DMT or Salvia for your first time either; although they only last a few minutes they will hit you like a pile of bricks and shatter your reality into a billion tiny little fractal shards, NOT a comfortable first excursion. Salvia may sound tempting simply because it's still legal in many places, and there still is the possibility for a beneficial trip (actually most psychonauts find that bad trips tend to improve their outlook on life in the long run, just as much as good trips), but it has too much potential to scare the ever-living fuck out of a newcomer.

Although not a psychedelic, good quality MDMA has the same entheogenic potential to help break you out of a depressive slump, but unadulterated MDMA is very difficult to obtain, and street Ecstasy is always adulterated with things that might always ruin its effect.

Again, I would suggest shrooms, as they are relatively easy on you and relatively easy to obtain. If you don't have druggie friends or contacts you also have the option with them of reading up on mycoculture and growing your own, since spores are legal to order over the internet in most states. Whatever you do, read read read everything you possibly can about what it is you're going to use (wikipedia, erowid are good starting places) and how to use it, and know what you're getting yourself into.

Here's a fairly well-publicized research article on the unambiguously positive effects psilocybin can have on people: http://www.maps.org/w3pb/new/2006/2006_Griffiths_22780_1.pdf

I'm currently on it. It personally didn't give me any zombie-like side effects, though I do get a mild headache from it once in a while. Side effects are person to person, so you'd get just as much advice from paxil.com or wherever they're legally obligated to list them. If you get any intolerable side effects, just stop taking them and tell the doctor that prescribed them. I'm sure there are hundreds of other medications you could try.

I really recommend exercise, though. My depression vanished once I started a routine and started losing weight, and I had it pretty bad.

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT try salvia or DMT your first time. I've had universe shattering experiences on salvia (haven't gotten around to the DMT yet) that no first timer should ever go through. Literally I experienced ego-death and didn't speak for 2 days afterwords.
