I don't like eating sludge (oatmeal). Is it alright to eat them dry? Do they have to have some preparation if they're going to be eaten dry?

I use dry oats (the 3-minute kind) when I make muesli. Works well.

What if one were to just grab a handful of oats and eat em? No big deal, or is there some disadvantage?

Other than super dry, no.

Cooked oatmeal is lower glycemic index, since cooking releases some water-soluble fibers.

Steel cut oats, faggots. It has a beautiful texture, like an al dente risotto. You can do them really easily. Boil them hard for a few minutes, cover, and let sit for about 10 minutes. Mix in your cream, honey, etc., and enjoy the finest oats you'll eat.

how much milk/water do you boil?

and do you boil first, THEN add oats?
or add oats and milk/water at the same time?

I use water instead of milk, about 3-1. I find that milk separates when boiled. Doesn't matter if you boil the water first. The OATZ are very forgiving when it comes to quantities.

I use just a drop of heavy cream for flavour, in addition to a little honey and cinnamon. Yes, the cream is fatty, but it's only a few grams of fat, which your brain needs anyway in the morning, so I say go for it. Plus, you've just been fasting for 8 hours. Go ahead and give your body something it wants.
