dear /fit/-

does standing do anything body wise? i have a job where i spend roughly 4-6 hours standing/walking lightly (i'm a hostess at applebee's) and i work almost everyday. my legs hurt like shit afterwards, so i just wanted to know if standing for a long time has any kind of impact at all.

Not really, they are sore afterward because of acid build up in the muscles but you aren't working them out near enough to do anything.

Makes you good at standing all day, that's about it. Standing on my feet 10 hours a day last summer ruined my athletic ability.

Add some dancing to that standing, and you'll be golden.

Hostess = too young to serve drinks and be a 'waitress'

We're designed to stand that much, it's no shock to the system.
Your bones take most of the effort so standing really doesn't do much.

I stand around 6-8 hours a day (being a chef trainee sucks at this part). I haven't found much improvement in myself. Funny thing is every since I've started squats I can stand for 8 hours without complaining about it. >_>

its amazing how much the extra body strength aids in just about anything. i can crouch and kneel w/no problem and dont have to work for balance. Working the lower back has helped posture and soreness too.

Medicine Student here:
Standing for long time periods, without resting could make you develop varicose veins. So i recommend you to rest for a while when working. Also when you're about to get to sleep, or whenever you can, try to rise your legs, and rest them in a wall or something, to help the blood in the veins of your legs to return easily to your heart =D

I hope my english is good enough to be understandable, i'm not from an english speaking country... but still i wanted to help :3

Protruding veins aren't always varicose veins.
