well they're like regular sit-ups, except instead of stabilizing your feet you have a partner stabilize your calves. The important thing about these is that instead of using your toes to push upward you press inward and downward with the back of your legs. This prevents or minimizes the work that your hip flexors would usually do and puts all the work on the abdominals, even the obliques.
