i hear rowing is a great workout, what is the proper form for this?

Push with your legs all the way then lean back then pull your arms in then let your arms back out then lean forward again then pull your legs back in.

The entire recovery part of the stroke should take 2-3x as long as the stroke part of the stroke unless you're doing a little sprint thing, which you shouldn't do so often.
