>ARMS stands for "Assessment of Recruit Motivation and Strength." Let me tell you, 'Motivation' is the key word in this acronym. They told me that only about 1 in 10 applicants who attempt the ARMS test will pass it, and I can tell you from experience: you have to really, REALLY want to pass the test in order to make it through.

>The first, and worst, part of the test is the box stepping exercise. Men are given a 16" box, which is roughly the height of a coffee table (women use a 12" box). You are given a tempo of 120 beats per minute and need to step up onto the box on the beat (in my case, it was a CD with a recording of a metronome; YMMV). You step "up-up-down-down" on the beat, which means you make 30 round trips (all the way up and down) every minute. You have to do this for five minutes.

I'm enlisting in the National Guard(don't bother me about this) and I have to pass this particular test. First off to be eligible to take this test I had to lose 4 inches off my waist which I did with calorie restriction and an hour every day of intense cross training on either a treadmill or elliptical depending on my mood of the day and weight training.

What can I do to maximize my performance on this particular activity.

Also I started out at 230 when I began training for this and I'm down to 215 after about a month and a half.

Why would you wanna enlist in the national guard?

Oh well it's your choice not mine.

Yes, yes it is. This really isn't a discussion about the pros and cons of my decision its a question about the specific exercise I outlined.

Pro/Anti war views aside how about some advice here?

get to work on your stairs mate, just blitz it as fast as you can for 5 minutes, take a breather for 2 minutes and then do it again. rinse repeat for as long as you can, if you do this every day, no word of a lie. you will piss that test.
There is no better way to train for an event than by doing it

PS running/jumping on the spot or sets of squat thrusts should give you the kind of endurance you need specific to the activity.
