Hey there /fit/ I am joining the navy in about 6 months and I am in need of some critical reshaping. I am not in good shape, long time nerd and terrible couch potato.
I just made the cutoff of 25% body fat at 24% and looking at the required fitness levels for boot camp I am nowhere near it. I am in the process of trying to lose weight and started working out.
Now I am not asking for miracle exercises or fad diets, all I want to know is if my goals are reasonable:

I am 200lbs now and want to be 170lbs by Nov.
I can do 20 pushups and need to do 80 in 2 minutes.
I can do 25 situps and need to do 90 in 2 minutes.
And last a mile and a half run in under ten minutes, I cannot currently jog anywhere near that.

Just let me know if my goals are anything near reasonable, and also any meal ideas because i am fresh out. Thanks /fit/ freaks!

25% bodyfat is the cutoff now? Holy shit, they've really lowered their standards these days.

IIRC, the bare requirements are 70 push-ups in 2 minutes (that seems a bit high, it might be lower), 60 sit-ups in 2 minutes, and 1.5 mile run in under 12:30.

The requirements you listed are way too high, and would probably be more like the bare minimum for SEAL qualification or something. Please don't tell me you're joining to become a SEAL...

What's wrong with him trying to be a SEAL?

I'm thinking about trying to get into the AF Special Tactics next year after I graduate college. I wasn't in great shape, but you CAN get there.

Nothing wrong with it I guess, but joining under the sole premise of becoming a SEAL is just putting yourself up to an 80% chance of getting fucked over and stuck chipping paint on the USS Neversail for the next 4 years.

Nah, I'd put it up to about 96%.

Then again, we don't know much about the OP's situation. He could be going in as an officer, and if you do that (at least for the AF), they tell you where they'll send you and give you the chance to back out and go on with your life.

Your goals are extremely reasonable. Losing the 30 lbs. of fat will probably be most difficult. What kind of shape are you in right now? Little muscle, no muscle what so ever? Height? Activity level?

80 push ups? oh wow. thats kind of demanding.

join the marines before you become our taxi. Protip: stop being lazy and fat, get off your ass and run. run like no fucking tomorrow. also pullups>pushups. try scizzor kicks for abs.

The Navy hasn't taxied marines around for quite some time... I'm pretty sure the government just fly you guys into friendly airbases in the region... Unless your comment was directed at the AF guy.

A mile and a half in under 10 mins?
That's pretty fucking easy. I run track and even the out of shape girls can do that easily.
Navy requirements = joke.

The situps will be easy once you're not fat, I do sets of 250 crunches.

The pushup requirement may be a bit tough, I normally do sets of 35 but if pushed I could probably meet that.

Just train hard and you'll easily be able to do it.

OP here
Thanks to genetics I do have a bit of muscle but to be really honest its mostly fat, kills my endurance. I am 5'10" and now I am fairly active, I work in an autoshop and jog/workout daily now.

25% is the cutoff for entering DEP, IIRC is lower but i cannot remember what exactly but it is easier now. Also to clear up the confusion these are my goals not the bare minimums for completing bootcamp.

Thanks for the support but its nothing as interesting as the SEALs, I am doing Nuclear Field so super nerd of the navy, however bootcamp requires us all to perform at a certain level.

the navy is lax on running since you cant move much on boats except for the seals but they have other requirments.

Good luck then dude. I knew someone who went in as a Nuke. I also knew someone who went in as a submariner.

So out-of-shape girls run miles in around the lower area of 6 minutes? Yeah, ok. Under 10 minutes for 1.5 miles isn't easy for a lot of people.

Pretending to be Kenyan isn't cool.

Alright maybe I'm exaggerating, but girls on the track team do that routinely.

Since this is for both Health and Fitness. Stop. Reassess what you are thinking of doing.
Have you talked to any nukes? Ever wonder why reenlistment bonuses are so high? The navy doesn't give out money like that because they are buddy-buddy with the nukes. They give out money like that because the job is one of the most horrible things you can do to yourself. No-one who is not married wants to stay in.

I don't know many other jobs where you are expected to survive off of 6 hours of sleep in a week. And it's not like you had been sleeping 6 hours a night for the month prior to that either.

Not to put down the entire military, but NF is not the way to go.

does the US navy not believe in training their recruits?....
