Alright /fit/, I know this is going to sound like a stupid question, but what is the best way to breathe when working out, especially with cardio. Short, quick breaths? Deep breaths? I find that anytime I exert myself I forget to breathe and don't get enough air into my body, causing me to get tired faster.
>> Anonymous
That totally depends on the pace of whatever you're doing. I usually go in & two steps, out & two steps
>> Anonymous
well for lifting it's exhale when exerting (eg pushing on a press) and inhale when relaxing...

So short, quick breaths are good?

I'm just starting to work out so my pace isn't going to be too fast, but moderate enough to make you work.

Seriously, there is no right answer. Some running coaches will try to impress their methodology onto their trainees, but it doesn't make it the only way. You're going to have to experiment to see what works best for you.

Personally, I do one deep breath, followed by three shallow breaths to help move out the CO2 in the lungs. You can try that and see how that works for you, or maybe modify to something that you like.

Yes, depends on pace. Match it to your steps if you're running. I usually take two steps for inhale, two for exhale, repeat.
Sometimes I have to switch to 2 steps for inhale, one for exhale, sometimes I can go 3 inhale, 2 exhale.

When using weights, inhale on the easy part, exhale on the hard part. So for a pull-up, exhale while pulling up and inhale while lowering.

No, short breaths are horrible, they force you to contract your diaphragm too frequently. But overly drawn out incredibly deep breaths aren't good either. Keep them large but within reason. And also keep them in line with your steps/stroke/cycle.

lol breathing like that will snap your spine on a heavy lift.

you hold your fucking breath, and breath out when you finish the lift. OR, if you have to breath, let your breath out in tight short spurts. this is called the valsava method, and its mean to use the air in your belly as orthopedic support, otherwise you break your fucking back.

you aren't going to have a heart attack or blood pressure issues, the circulatory system adapts to heavy lifting just like any other system.

simply put, if you are able to freely inhale and exhale during a rep, you aren't trying hard enough

anaerobic (lifting):>>175313

aerobic (cardio): slow steady....in through nose 2secs out through mouth 2secs

no. you can breath in between reps, during a rep you hold a big breath tight in your belly.

if i inhaled on descent of a heavy back squat, i would die.

Thanks guys.

>>175403
That was something else I was wondering about. Breathing through your nose vs. breathing through your mouth.
>> Anonymous
>>175408
no no no no no no
You should never hold your breath like that. You need to be taking in as much oxygen as possible.
>> Anonymous
>>175419
why. you can breath in between reps.

take a bigass breath, descend, explode up, exhale. you get plenty of oxygen.

its a natural response your body has to protect its spine. when you focus on breathing during the rep, you are overriding self protecting autonomous functions that your brain has. you aren't going to pass out unless you try and do a whole set with one breath

this is an example of bad information from general PTs, along with cardio being best for burning fat, deadlifts being too dangerous, not letting your knees go over your toes on squats, and general stupid shit that we are supposed to believe.

it's fucking wrong.

watch this video, does he breath during the reps? no. is he stronger than you? yes.
>> Anonymous
i think breathing in out out through the mouth makes ur mouth dry quicker with big breaths.....makin u breath harder earlier....i tried goin in and out through my nose and i could see a considerable differnece.

So what's the correct information? Particularly for "cardio being best for burning fat" and "not letting your knees go over your toes on squats".

>>175431
he isn't breathing during the rep and he's doing it wrong...and no he is not stronger than me
I used to make the same mistake and it made me feel like I was about to pass out.

Those articles are shit. MSNBC, bitch? The same jokers that probably have a million articles about "walking 20 mins a day will make you healthy".

If you even rely on this shit, well, you don't squat 385 lbs. Pink dumbells are your speed.

Breath is held during a squat. Stop trying to kill people.

I usually do two short quick intakes and then a big outburst when running. When lifting i sort of don't breathe.

you're wrong....personal trainers would say you're wrong...the internets say you're wrong....own up to it and stop baawwing.

Another guy here. Im reading Starting Strength and it recommends holding your breath and not do the inhale and exhale thing.
>> Anonymous
You have to explode with your breathing to get any type of power. I'm mainly into power lifting so I don't know about circuit training but that stuff doesn't help anyways. But when you start to push the bar off of your chest in bench or ascend in squats explode out with your breathing.

shitty sauces are shitty

and no, you dont squat bigger than that nigger in the video

For 5x5 weight stuff I usually hold my breath - really try and compact my centre (abs etc); usually its fine for 5 reps one 1 breath, sometimes gotta take a quick inhale in between reps. If you are doing more reps then you really need to take a break to breathe, but I don't think it helps to be doing that while concentrating on pushing a heavy weight above your body.
