Well, the way I saw it was as with most diet products, some people wanting to lose weight tend to overeat thinking that because it's diet, it's okay for them to consume more of it.
So the effect is either canceled out, or they actually gain weight. Like for example, picture a fatty with a bag of chips. They eat a handful because they know it's fattening, and are trying to cut back. Then later they get diet chips. They eat two whole bags thinking it's okay because it's diet. This is followed by massive cardiac failure.
