You may think that's absurd, but what do you think people did before "Nike Shox With Xtreme Abzorbing Action" did? Not run?
When running correctly, your calves and foot arches will absorb all of the impact, rather than the shoe cushioning and your joints. However, that does make it very critical that you run with a good forefoot-strike (see>>15913), because if you try to do a heel-strike in Vibrams, you'll feel it. Your calves will be sore about 5 days after your first run, but it gets much better after that, and you can run pain free, even on concrete.
