Weight loss by biking? Jan
Just wondering: how much weight can you lose by riding a mountainbike?

depends on terrain, but a ton if you can push yourself without getting injured

i spent my last summer holidays biking at least 2 hours a day. i can really recommend biking, especially outside... can't think of anything more motivating than a beautiful countryside and actually seeing progression. also, i got slimmed down a lot.

Biking is really addicitve, once you start it, you can't stop it anymore. Highly recommended!

Depends on how long you do it. Biking in hilly terrain is a great workout.

Just be careful, back in San Diego I used to bike around, and cars made a habit of buzzing me.

By riding a mountain bike you are limited to losing 7.85% of your current body weight.

j/k. It's good, low-impact exercise, but be careful on public roads.

Never learned how to ride a bike. Never had very motivated parents.

Not true. Invest in a hornless bike seat. It's the most comfortable thing I've ever rode on, although it does take away from the ability to steer a bit. I wouldn't use it in city traffic but for trail riding it's much more comfortable.

Biking is excellent exercise especially some serious mountain biking! I did 1989 kms last year and although ive had asthma for so long i could outswim and outrun all my footballer friends and even though i didn't go to the gym, i ended up doing more weights when i went back to going there. Plus i burned 500 cals a day. And its addictive!

It was about half an hour ride, all uphill, to college last year. I started riding there and back every day, and eventually started coming home for lunch as well. Over 4 months I lost 25 pounds, and gained some decent leg muscles.

Seconded. A hornless bike seat is the best investment I've ever made. No more pain in-between my legs or fears about sterility.

Cycling can be a great way to lose weight, but only if you do it right. There have been far too many injuries incurred, simply because people do not bother learning the basics. Chose a bike that is the proper size for you. How can you tell? Go to a bike shop, ask some cyclists, basically talk to anyone with experience. A bike that is too small or too large can lead to ankle, knee, hip, back, neck injuries over time. Cycling is supposed to be fun, not painful.

Make sure you're bike is set to your body, again ask around. Many people put the saddle (seat) too low and injure their knees.

That being said it all depends on what kind of cycling you will be doing. Mountain bikes are awesome because they allow you to go on or off road. If you will be hitting the roads follow the rules (In most states and provinces bikes are regarded as vehicles according to traffic laws) and be prepared for an awesome cardio workout. Off-road is awesome because it mixes technical skills with a great workout.

How much weight you lose depends on the type of cycling you do, along with the intensity of your workout. In 2 months of commuting 8km a day, everyday and a healthy diet I lost 10lb and had developed some leg definition.

Depends on your current weight I guess. I was 5'11 225 pounds and lost about 40 pounds riding my bike in 3 months. I also cut way back on soda and junk food too so that probably helped.
