I'm thinking about taking up swimming one or two days a week in an effort to lose a little weight, for like two hours a sitting (I like swimming).

What's a good amount of laps of a standard 25-yard pool to do in a sitting, if I'm mostly swimming breaststroke? Should I be mixing up my strokes, and doing bits of freestyle and backstroke (fuck butterfly)?

Does treading water do anything at all, or is it more for pre-workout stretching? My fairly competitive swim team used to tread before practice, but is that a good idea for just one person? (The coach was having us tread while telling us stuff, so it might have just been "better than sitting on the bench").

I swim between 84 and 102 lengths in the local 25m pool three times a week. Takes me about an hour.

1 front crawl, 2 breast, 1 front crawl, 2 breast. Occasionally, like when I pass 30 and 60 I'll swap a front crawl for a backstroke.

Every 12 I stop for about 45 seconds and I use this time to stretch and catch my breath.

Unless you know how to do breaststroke well, it's a really easy stroke to do with little effort. Mix up free, back, and fly to keep your heart rate up and not work the same joints too much.
