If you add weights to your hands like that you will only interfere with your body's motor learning ability. Your punches will actually slow down after your body starts learning to make the familiar movement patterns slower (because of the added weights). If you want to become faster and get greater force production, start doing the olympic lifts and their power variants.

Punching comes from the legs and the hips. Ideally, you want to not use your shoulders at all when you do a punch. Relax the shoulders, twist forward with your hip, and use that momentum from your legs and hip to shoot out your hand as fast and relaxed as possible. You can make your arms stronger, but that won't increase speed or general punching strength. A lot of it has to do with technique, and your legs.

Here's my fast hands drill:

1) Hold a medicine ball (5-10 pounds) close to your chest
2) Let go of the ball and shoot both of your hands out in a double punch as fast as you can
3) Return your hands back to catch the falling ball

I start out at around 70% speed for a few times to warm up, then start going all out. The point is to not let the medicine ball drop on the ground, and the faster you return your hands, the higher up the ball will be caught.

Lots of variations to this, so play around with it.

Since you guys are fucking clueless, I'll help you out.
Hand speed like Roy Jones Jr or Ali is something you're either born with or without. But you can increase it, but only to a certain extent.

Here's some stuff we do at my gym, I think it's call plyometrics (dont quote me on that)
What you do it do dumbell presses, there's a certain way you have to do it though.. you bring the dumbells down slowly, then explode up, the bring em back down slowly. also if you want to lift to hit hard, you low weight, high reps. (you dont wanna bulk too fast, you'll be slow and hit like a bitch) this is why those bulky/body builder type guys cant fight for shit.

No, any kind of explosive punching like movement with weights that you dont let go wont make you faster, because you always have to decelerate the weight at the end, else it rips out your fucking arm. All this will do is fuck up your joints and get you into the bad habit of not punching "through" your opponent.

Instead, do some dumbbell shotputs. Grab your favorite dumbbell, go to our local park, get in your fighting stance, and throw that fucker as hard as you can.

This will teach you to punch through your opponent and will make you faster and more explosive.

I'm not talking 50 pound dumbbells that are gonna rip your arms out of socket at the peak of the punch, I'm talking 1,2,3,4,5 pounds. If you think that shit would hurt your joints, you're a pussy and you're not boxing anyway. It will build speed, it will build power, and you can also feel when you get sloppy. And no, you won't build so much arm muscle that you become too bulky. Remember, you are throwing from the hip.

for an activity to have sports specific carry over it needs to closely mimic the pattern in which the nerves are fired in that sport. the russians go on about this a lot.

weights in your hands not so much, because you are teaching the muscles in your shoulders to compensate for an increased downwards force due to gravity on the wieght. it has a very different nerve pattern. i wouldn't bother if i were you. stick to gloves and a super-heavy bag or something, augmented with appropriate weightlifting.

some idiot at the gym that i used to go to was "shadow boxing" with a 40 in front of the mirror, he was doing it kinda fast and i felt like going over and punching him. well anyway dude was throwing straights and hooks (i wouldn't recommend doing this with a 40) and he went on to do uppercuts, when he was clearly tired from the previous punches. a few secs passed and all that i see is a 40 flying in the air while the idiot does some kind of gay follow thru with his right arm and the dumbbell lands on the huge mirror and breaks it. up until this point i was pretty sure i was the only one watching him but then the whole gym stopped and quite frankly i didn't feel any sympathy towards the guy. moral of the story:don't be that guy. now i realize that 40 is a lot more than 20 but still, when you swing that weight outwards it feels and is a lot more than that. and even if you were to tie it to your hands, other than looking like a total failure, there's a great chance that the dumbbell's gonna fly off.

if you wanna work on hand speed, do lots of pushups. do clapping pushups. do pushups with your legs higher than your hands. try to be able to do more than 100 pushups with out stopping and your hands will definitely be fast. and a 5 pounder is definitely the best weight for shadow boxing.

If you really want to attach weights use forearm guards and strap small plates to them. Distribute them evenly, and make sure you wear big ass gloves.
