Hey /fit/,
I have begun running about 2 miles every morning but most mornings my run is cut short because of a pain in my ankly/shin area. I will run about half-full mile before this pain starts and I can't continue running due to the pain. It goes away when I slow down to a walk or a very slow jog, but when I begin to jog again , the pain returns. Does this have anything to do with my shoes or something else?

I run at night, then do a bit of muscle building exercises after that, just before bedtime.

This will help you sleep better, your body will be tired forcing you to sleep like a kitten. Also your body doesnt finish its workout straight away, soo you will be sleeping and getting work out benefits at same time. Why waste sleep time?

Then your energised for the next day.

Sounds like you have shin-splints. Ice down the part that hurts and take Ibuprofen to help with the inflammation. Avoid running on hard surfaces.

I agree. It could be your leg muscles are not providing enough structural support. If you want the problem to go away you need to build up the muscles around your tibia.

Next time you run, try pointing your foot down and writing the alphabet with your toes. It helps stretch out your shins. You might also have an over or under pronation, in which case you'll probably need some different shoes. Newbalance.com has some tests you can do at home to figure out your foot type, like dipping your feet in water and stepping on some paper to see your foot arch. If all else fails, try changing your form. Roll your feet and keep your shoulders up and over your hips. Try not to strike too hard with your heel, or try lengthening your stride.

the same exact thing happened to me, and it turned out i sprained my ankle. i tried to just run through the pain but it started spreading down to the top of my foot and hurting all the time, not just when i was running, so i switched over to a bike for 2 weeks and it totally went away! this was like 4 months ago, and now i run with no pain

Is it on the inside of your leg or on the front of your shin?

Does it hurt when you press on the edge of the bone at all?

OP here:
I thought shin-splints involved excrutiating pain? I only feel pain when I run.

Press on your leg in the area you feel the pain using 2 fingers, have a hunt around and see if it hurts to press anywhere, once you've found that spot it'll be a lot easier to tell.

When I press on the bone area I feel a slight irritation but nothing similar to the pain when running.

Sounds like shin splints then, you'll need to rest for a bit, there are some exercises you can perform to fix it, or you may need new shoes.
