lets talk about tanning

how often do you do it? what really are the dangers?

I use a Dove tanning moisturizer ever 3rd day, which slightly darkens your skin and moisturizes, and also I go to the salon for 12 minutes in the medium bronzer, which gives a slight bit of colour after a few sessions.

anyone tried melanotan? here is a pic of it working

Slap some of this on your skin when you tan.

Thank you for your topic, sir, but I prefer to stay pale as the full moon.

using a regular moisturizer will help your skin absorb a healthier, darker tan too.

Cut down a little bit on your time in the booth, though, if you moisturize first.

Using tanning creams? Enjoy your MELANOMA!

I'm a hairy land whale, but I get plenty of sun from swimming around.

The real question is how the hell you tan your cheeks. I am always a shade lighter in the region of my face that I shave. Anybody else experience this?

Do you shave everyday? If you have facial hair, obviously sun doesnt penetrate as well. So just go outside clean shaven more often.

Every mornin'. I do use an electric razor which doesn't have the closest shave, but I've used a blade for months at a time to similar effect. Strange thing is I don't get 5 o'clock shadow nearly as fast as I see most people getting. *shrug*

Oh good, so you're putting paint on yourself.

Like I said, enjoy your MELANOMA.

The pic on the left looks sexiest, IMO. I love pale skin.

Tan is out. Pale is in. Back to the way things should be.

Also, there are ways to lighten skin for those of you that want to go lighter. Hydroquinone (sp?), for example.

gross

pale skin is inherently less attractive due to the association human beings have with dead corpses

Nope. Pale skin is better.

Pale skin, Dark skin, there the same to me. Both can look good, just no nigras.

In old times, pale skin meant you weren't in the fields working as a slave.

The danger is enhanced risk of skin cancer. No matter what kind of tan you get, no matter the method, tan = more likely to get cancer.

It's just a question of whether you think the cosmetic appeal outweighs the possible medicinal danger. I wouldn't say tans are 'out' but there's a dawning awareness among those of farth northwestern European ancestry that a deep tan might not be in their best interest.

The real dangers of tanning come in the form of damaged skin.

Comming from a mediterranean country which has one of the highest percentages of yearly sunlight in Europe, we learn from wee age certain tips.

1) Use sunscreen! Seriously, unless you want the skin of a 40 year old surfer, all dark and craked and full of blemishes, you'll slap some average sunscreen on.
2) Natural tanning is better than tanning beds. Grab some friends, go to the beach, enjoy the sun, have a swim, have a nice lunch and let the sun do the work for you. Better than bombard your skin with UV rays, I assure you.
3) Drink water. Keep yourself hydrated when you're on the beach or you'll end up with a sunstroke.

No, not really.

You see, just about 200 or so years ago, pale skin was a mark of higher status. The peasentry worked the fields and thus was tanned. As such, whiteness was a mark of those who had others to do work for them.

With the advent of the industrial revolution, tanned skin instead became a mark of those who had time for leisurly outdoor activities, such as camping, hunting, going to the shore, etc etc, and pale, livid skin because a mark of those who spent their days indoors, in factories or mines.
