have you done any wrestling?
What do you see yourself wanting to do?
Punch really hard?
Tap someone out in a triangle choke?
Flying kick through a wall?
Any combination of the above?

Basically all I want to do it get in better shape and be able to stop anyone beating the shit outta me. I used to do judo when i was like 5-6 but I cant remember anything I learnt, lol
>> Anonymous
Judo and Jujitsu are more of the GRAPPLAN. Tae Kwon Do specializes in kicks. Google the other styles and pick one that you like the most. They are all going to teach you discipline anyway.
>> Anonymous
you won't be beating the shit out of anyone as long as you're a weak bitch, regardless of the martial arts you havent mastered.

Weight train, cardio, learn where testicles are, learn to box, learn to wrestle
>> Anonymous
just do what you think you would be good at. exercise. eat right. stick to it. learn to fight back. get mad and focused.
win

>>267054
What makes you think im a weak bitch?
Maybe I misunderstand, but I thought the whole idea of martial arts was that you learnt to defend yourself from bigger people?
>> Anonymous
If you're looking to defend yourself from "bigger" people, the only one in that list that will do that is Judo. Strength matters in all the rest of them.

No, it's so you can beat up on even SMALLER people for the contents of their pockets.

Also, judo or gtfo.

>but I thought the whole idea of martial arts was that you learnt to defend yourself from bigger people

if you come into a dojo with that mentality you are going to get your ass handed to you.

OP look up Goju Ryu for karate. Its no bullshit traditional karate founded by Sensei Chojun Miyagi.
>> Anonymous
>>267060

Where the fuck would you get this idea? I mean, obviously that's why they have weight categories in sports. It's to keep the smaller guys from beating up on the larger guys.

Fuck's sake. Height and weight tend to play a huge role. When two guys of equivalent skill fight, the bigger one will win all but exceptional cases. (similar conditioning, etc, etc, yadda yadda yadda)

if someone twice your size with some fighting experience attacks you you're fucked even if you know a martial art
>> Anonymous
>>267086
i think he means bigger untrained people.

i.e. a 15 year old "weak" but trained individual can beat up an older bigger individual who is only trained in the subtle art of bullying.
>> Anonymous
>>267096

Don't be so sure about that. Technique only gets you so far. In order to be good at fighting and "beating people up," you have to, well, fight and "beat people up" on a regular basis.

A long time ago I had a black belt in Karate. I thought I was some pretty hot shit until I got into a few real fights. That's when I learned that superior technique don't mean shit when the chaos of a real fight prevents you from thinking fast enough to use it.
>> Tub o' Lard
>>267106
true, but isn't discipline supposed to help with that?

i.e. keeping a cool head in hot moments.

What about Aikidou
>> Anonymous
>>267110
Basically Judo with less martial art but more philosophy.
>> Anonymous
I would advise against judo simply because it favors shorter people throwing bigger people and at 6ft you're going to have to struggle to get under your opponent's center of gravity.

Personally, I would recommend Kickboxing/MuayThai for defense/fitness as they tend to be more no-nonsense sweat-fests from start to finish.
Some karate/TKD schools may focus on 'technique' at the expense of actual conditioning.
Never heard of Aegis.
To bad kung-fu isn't on your list (I have NEVER met a kung-fu practitioner who wasn't in AWESOME physical condition, and an AWESOME fighter)

When you block a kick and get hit so hard that it causes your muscles to momentarily fail and become unable to support their own weight, discipline can quickly go out the window. Real discipline isn't sitting there on your knees for two hours and practicing some kata over and over.

Not trying to sound like an internet tough guy, but seriously. Martial arts training doesn't mean much when, in the heat of the moment, your opponent is more experienced at fighting in general than you are.

What is real discipline? Making sure that when you go in for the punch, kick, elbow, knee, or what have you, you keep your damn guard up at all times and try not to leave any obvious openings. True discipline is knowing to follow up with a second blow after you land your first one without waiting too long and passing up the opportunity.

Aikido wrist locks and takedowns can be effective against a sloppy, over dedicated opponent. That being said, I would also learn how to take a punch and give a few back at some point.
Aikido is not a 'complete' but I wouldn't mind stealing a few of their tricks.

i get what you're saying, but surely some form of martial art teaches you this. i dislike a lot of martial arts because they're so repetitive. everything is about "form" and everything is choreographed. that's shit. that won't help you in a real fight (which is why I like muay thai, seems different in that regard.)

>>267109
Conditioning is what is supposed to 'help with that'.
And by condition I mean allow someone to hit you. Hard (maybe not too hard at first). Several times. Learn to accept the pain. Learn to fight through it. Learn how to hit back. Hard. Several times.
Discipline, is what is necessary to endure the conditioning which is what is necessary to endure the fight.

I don't dislike kata. They're an effective teaching tool which gives students different techniques and sequences which may not be safe (or effective if safely trained) on live opponents. Examples include but are not limited to eye gouges, testicle gouges, arm breaks and subtle throws. Several also incorporate attacking/defending at different angles and some raw conditioning. Basically, it makes teachers jobs easier and less students get hurt.
That being said, nothing quite recreates the experience of hitting something that hits back, but you probably won't train gouging the eyes of four live opponents who surround you either.

>>267135
i'm sure. i thought martial arts helped with this? (some, anyways.)

You are a skinny little bitch, no amount of martial arts will stop people from kicking your ass.

If you wanna do martial arts go for it, but throw in a lifting routine.
>> Anonymous
I'd say go for Muay Tai or Kickboxing for the training and conditioning (and hitting stuff really hard). But I'd say try to get some sort of ground game e.g BJJ, Ju Jitsu, Judo
>> Anonymous
In Judo, your opponents may have a lower center of gravity, but at 6' most people will too, so you will be needing to use leverage against opponents either way. Alternatively, if you are within reach of a pool cue, you may want to take up fencing, as your height and reach will be an advantage if you can get to a hallway.
>> Anonymous
Judo isn't all about being short, a taller guy will usually beat the shorter guy as they have longer range, you can get off leg sweeps a lot easier if you have longer legs.

I have a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a 1st degree in Shotokan Karate, as well as being an instructor.

Karate definitely emphasizes more power in the strikes, and I learned much more from it than Tae Kwon Do. Also, as long as you find a good instructor who won't let your lazy shit slide, the stances and even basic drills should build muscle mass on their own. If you do your own routines as well it'll really help.
>> Anonymous
>>267232
Why the fuck are you an instructor you are too low ranked. At yondan you can maybe be a junior instructor. All that black belt means is that you have mastered the basics, now its time to get to the serious stuff.

Protip: there is no consistent grading system within or without any particular fighting system or systems.
You need to stfu, lurk moar, and train moar.

I'd stay away from Tae Kwon Do. Don't get me wrong, Tae Kwon Do can be an effective martial art but kicks are usually unrealistic during a real fight and most "dojos" are there to be fun and flashy. There ARE good places to train, but unfortunately Tae Kwon Do has really become the McDonalds of martial arts due to its popularity. It'd be tough to find an actual quality training center (which is something you wouldn't be able to identify unless you were already in a good dojo). The same goes with Karate, although to a lesser extent.

If you just want to go with practical, no nonsense kick assery, I'd go with either kickboxing or Muay Thai. You'll actually find a lot of gyms will offer them both hand in hand. Considering your height and your (lack) of weight, either of these will get you to build up muscle and teach you to take advantage of your extra range.

I train shitloads more than you do. I take okinawan Uechi ryu karate. I take fucking hits and give'em. You ain't a fucking instructor at shodan or nidan. Minimum amount of time to be an instructor is ten to fifteen years and at least a grading of yondan. This goes for most okinawa backed system.

A martial arts college near where I live offers those courses also, but in the uk

I always wanted to take a class in Ninjutsu. Ninja martial arts, deception and stealth. or Budojin, just the martial art techniques.

Like, u got armpit strikes wich overload the enemy central nervous system and really fluid and realistic assasination techniques.

What's Aegis? Also, go Muay Thai supplemented by some grappling. It doesn't matter how good you can punch and kick, if the fight goes to the ground and you're not sure what to do, you're screwed.
>> Anonymous
>>267369

do not EVAR go to the ground in a real fight

if an opponent manages it to get you on the ground, you want to get up on your feet as fast as you can, nothing else is important in this situation
