Today I actually ran (6.5 mph) nonstop for 3 miles in 28 minutes for the first time. It's weird that I didn't really gradually get up that point. The highest I had gone before was 1.5 miles without stopping to rest/walk. I noticed I wasn't particular exhausted to my limit after I was done either. Then it hit that I sort of felt the same way the other times ran. It wasn't so much that I stopped because I was tired before, but because running for so long for such long periods of time is so boring and it feels like an eternity. The only difference this time was that I didn't look at the timer and I sort of just lost myself in my imagination (ex: save pretty girls from pirates). Music can't keep me distracted because I know how long the songs are and then I just focus on when they end to see how long I've been on the treadmill.

So anyone else like this? Your barriers come from boredom, not exhaustion?

Was this outdoors or on a treadmill?

Which is exactly why I asked, you could try and find a running partner or group to join. It takes some of the monotony out of long runs if you have someone to converse with and compete with.

But yes, I reach boredom before exhaustion.

Load classical symphonies into your ipod that you have never listened to before. Music problem solved!

I sometimes have problems with this, but you seem to have discovered the solution of daydreaming while you run (I would suggest staying with the treadmill if you plan to lose yourself while running). Once I get to 4 miles at about 8mph, I'm pretty damn bored (that's half an hour of running), so I just step it up to 9 mph for the last mile. At least for me, pushing your speed up for the final stretch will keep you more focused on your own discomfort than your boredom.

does your gym not have tvs mounted in front of the treadmills?
