/fit/ milers...What's your best mile time? I haven't timed myself since freshman year and I don't remember what I got then. But during 7th and 8th grade I usually got around 7:30...I timed myself twice in the past week and got 6:25 then 6:24 today...I was trying to run under 6 and I felt like I really pushed myself to do that...But it was only 1 second faster. What do you do to get your mile time down?

6:13, but on a treadmill so don't know if that counts. Since a treadmill sets the pace for you and all you have to do is force yourself to keep up it seems like you don't have to push yourself as hard. I could probably do 5:30 or 5:00 if I practiced for a week or so and just set the mph on the treadmill up from 10 mph to 11 or 12 mph which wouldn't be all that much more difficult.

OP here

well i'm a freshman in college now so i've improved my time...those that were in the 5 minute range...what'd you do to improve your time? did you just run 2-3 miles or would you do more sprints? i could easily run 2-3 miles...i do it usually instead of doing a mile...but today i decided to take my dog for a run and he only went about .75 of a mile so we walked back home and i decided to time my mile...but i don't usually do sprints...

Back in high school my best time was a 6:56, which I considered pretty good for being a 230 lb wrestler. After HS I lost some weight, and got out of shape, but nowadays its around 7:30 as Im starting to run again.

that's why i stopped running... im 5 10 and i got down to 155 when i was running the mile under 6 minutes. i remember one time waking up and running a mile in 6 minutes on an empty stomach, that didn't feel good. now im at 190, most of which is muscle and i find it hard to run a mile any where near 6 minutes. lol i feel so fat but it's mostly muscle, i used to do 1.5 - 1.7 in 8.5 minutes and now i struggle to do a mile under that. i now sad, but i'm getting back to running, i can't believe im saying this but i gotta lose muscle.

9th grade. Ran all the time.

havent ran once since 11th grade. 19 now. Underweight... I'd get 8 minutes or so if i tried now.

shit, i'm no runner and I struggle to get under 9:30. I've been cycling lately to work on my cardio since I have asthma and it's helping my breathing, but still... how do you guys push yourselves to get times like that?

No. Just no. Treadmills don't take into account the heat of the daylight or the humidity which can ruin a person's run. Not to mention differenct surfaces provide different traction.

Anyway, my best time was a 6:27 in 12th grade before I got tendonitis in my left knee.

Your coach is a dick. Joint health is a big issue when it comes to running. "Work smarter, not harder." If only I knew not to overtrain myself as well I wouldn't be sidelined by tendonitis.

I used to sprint for 10 minutes straight then ease into an 8mph jog for 50 more minutes without stopping in between. I did this everyday on concrete, that's how I sent my knees to hell in a handbasket.

Hey /fit/,

Today at the gym I did a mile in 9 mins 20, this was on the treadmill. I'm 6ft1, and 120kg and mainly work weights. Only cardio stuff I do is skipping, muay thai and karate.

I know it's quite mediocre compared to most of you guys, but hey, I'm trying to improve myself and it can only get better.

Haven't timed myself running a mile in ages. Nowadays I usually do 3km runs, my best timing for that is around 12 minutes

About 6:45. I suuucck at running. I'm having to get into it more for ROTC though.

My dad has run a 4:11. His best double mile is 9:40.

Last time I was doing cross country, probably somewhere around 6/7 mins considering I did almost 3 miles in ~20mins

best time ever was 6:15. that was back when I swam a lot. Now, I run a lot. The other day I timed myself at 6:45.

Long story short, if you want to do any form of cardio, swim. It makes you better at everything.
