Vegan? Anonymous
I was wondering if there is any long-term health risks with being vegan?
If yes; what are they?

Dying young, wiry hair, anorexia, pale skin, slow metabolism, extreme weakness, weak immune system, etc. Just accept the fact that we are omnivores and quit being a faggot

If you're really careful with what you eat and make sure you get all your essential amino acids from mixing protein sources, don't eat a lot of soy, and supplement with the things you will be deficient in, you'll be fine.

Just don't be one of those vegans who eats french fires and drinks coke all day and then touts the health benefits of their "vegan" diet.

Everything you just said is wrong.

The biggest risk involved in long term veganism or vegetarianism is iron and zinc deficiencies. It's possible to become anemic if you are too restrictive or don't take supplements.

Soy is fine. It's about as dangerous as over consuming ocean fish (mercury) or red meat (digestive problems).

Yeah, you shouldn't strictly live off of it, but it's blown way out of proportion and backed by a lot of junk science, just like the aspartame fiasco. Eating it three times a week is perfectly fine. Many people probably prefer soy to the potential dangers of ocean fish or the absurd levels of toxins in chicken.

Yeah soys not going to kill you, but relying on it as your main source of protein is a poor choice. I was mainly referring to the people who eat it 3-4 times a day.

Anal tearing, unless you were already gay, in which case you'll just get a major case of cumfarts.

buy the book "Becoming Vegan" by Brenda Davis. It will teach you all the food you should eat to stay healthy on a vegan diet (basically leafy greens and legumes). Iron deficiencies won't be a problem with you, unlike vegetarians as you probably will consume far more vitamin C than the general population. Vitamin C helps iron absorption along with other nutrients. I've been vegan for over four years and I'm pretty healthy (bike a couple miles a day and I avoid too much soy). enjoy ur clearer skin and zero risk for heart disease. oh and don't forget to supplement your B12 intake if you're not drinking fortified milks or eating much breakfast cereal.

Heart disease is virtually completely dependent on genetics.

Being vegan is stupid, farming of all kinds kills local wildlife. Not eating animal products doesn't mean you aren't responsible for the deaths of animals, you're still indirectly killing them. Animals aren't conscious on the same level that humans are but most importantly "nature" is tough, things die, things kill each other. Humans are omnivores, that means we eat meat. It (and other animal products) are good for us. A natural human diet includes meat.

But most of vegans don't think about those. They just can't stand meat. For some even the smell of it make them puke and shit.

Guess what guys? Not all protein is created equally! The protein in a wheat stalk is perfect if you're a growing wheat stalk but.. humans aren't wheat stalks.

Guess what we are? We're meat. So, eat the fucking meat protein guys. Seriously.

B12-vitamin. That's the only nutrition that is somewhat hard to get by on a vegan diet, and if your body runs out of B12, your memory will take some (temporary) damage.

This happens to bums sometimes, because alcohol breaks down the B12 in your body.

On a normal, vegan diet, with some B12-pills, you have NO long term health risks.

I've been vegan for 5 years (I know, not a long time) and I feel absolutely great.
I also don't drink or smoke, and I exercise 5 times a week, cycling anywhere I want to go. I feel strong, I'm lean, and I build muscle pretty fast.
Good luck to those of you considering veganism!

Like others have said, humans are omnivores. Our natural diet includes meat as well as plant matter. A healthy diet incorporating lean meats, veggies, fruits, and nuts/seeds is the healthiest kind of diet.

Still, you can be healthy with a vegan diet. Just not as healthy as you would be if you also included some good meat in your diet.

For the record: "vegan" is a bit of a misnomer, and is applied to the wrong group of people. There are several types of vegans, some of which will eat fish, a meat (in this case, meat = living thing with a complete protein).
Vegetarians are the ones that have completely cut meat and other animal products from their diet.

OP could be pretty healthy with a vegan diet, if he did it correctly. I have to agree with everyone else, though. Just eat the damn meat, your body needs it.

From my experience (2 veggies), the dislike for the smell/taste comes after they have decided to become vegetarian for some other reason.

Veganism is dumb.
lol at having to eat pills or get soya to sustain regular diet.

It's called being vegetarian and it is superior in every way.
Pescetarianism is even superior.

Srsly guys.

And well-regulated omnivorous diet > pescetarianism

Are you trolling? You've got your terms backwards. Google it.

people rarely lose weight when becoming vegans (or even vegetarians). veganism is really restricting and generally unhealthy in the long run.

Well, if your diet requires a lot of protein, look at peanut butter compared to a lean piece of meat; one serving of peanut butter is not even half the amount of protein in the meat, plus there's a lot of fat intake to consider.

I'm not entirely sure if Veganism is worth it; I remember it in high school, coupled with Wicca, as the "cool thing" for whiny emo girls to use for getting more attention...

If the reason for being a vegetarian is to avoid eating animal-based products, then it's called being a hypocrite. I've yet to meet a vegetarian that knows how to lay off the cheese, where the hell do they think it comes from?!
