Some people, such as my self, find it extremely difficult if not downright impossible to run through shinsplits. For example, I can ride a bike at high intensities for hours or climb a hundred floors on a stairmaster without tiring, but I can't run for more than 5 minutes or so due to shin splints, and attempting to do so is extremely dangerous. In cases like this you risk seriously and permanently damaging the muscle if you attempt to "man up" and run through the pain.
