How do I change my views on fitness? I haven't been physically active on a daily basis since I was a child (10+ years ago). I am not overweight, but I fear I will be if I don't take action.

Whenever I try to start exercising, or eating healthy however, I find it very difficult to stick to my plans. I think this is because I think of fitness as "do this so you don't get fat", and not "do this to respect your body and feel good about living".

How do I change my views and look at fitness as an integral part of life, and as something to be enjoyed?

force yourself. make it a part of your daily life. turn it into something you are scheduled to do, and don't stop doing it. eventually it will get easier, and you wont mind it so much. hell you might even like it.

and if you can, forget the gym. depending on where you live i'm sure there's some great outdoor spot to run or hike, or even just walk for an hour or two a day

OK OP, first of all, I would advise that you do NOT get fitness advice here on /fit/.

Mostly its a bunch of trolls from /b/ and tub 'o' lards that pretend to be body builders.

Secondly, the first, most important step to getting in shape is creating a short term goal (3 months is best). If you can pick something doable--say lose 12 lbs--and stick with it, you will have the gumption to do almost anything else past that.

The hardest part is the first few days. I would suggest doing whatever sort of cardio floats your boat about 3-4 times a week. Also, you need to push yourself. This doesnt mean you have to become 'rocky' overnight, but you do have to do some work. If you feel burn and you end up tired and wiped, you're good.

Secondly, do some calisthenics. /fit/ HATES calisthenics, but /fit is also very very inexperienced. Try some body weight movements like squatting and standing and pushups/situps. This will help to burn some calories and get you used to working harder (not to mention add some muscle mass!).

The absolutely most important step is the diet. Don't go for a ditch diet, simply eat healthier, and in most cases, less. Don't reach for the cookies at night, and don't reach for the chips if you're idle. ALWAYS, and i mean ALWAYS have a bottle of water with you. It will amaze you as to how much your cravings will die when you take a few swigs.

Anyway, see you in a month when you come back to tell me that you have some small stretch marks and you've lost a quarter of an inch! :D

I recommend doing the 100 pushups program. It's a nice easy way to start doing a exercise routine REGULARLY. It's become habit to me, and now I'm adding one exercise at a time. Now I do 100 crunches with my pushups routine every single time. Next I'm going to add the sun salutation, then a plank (ab exercise) routine, then squats.

i just stopped eating dairy for 6 months and lost 30 lbs.

it's also good exercise in eating healthier. no white breads, no mayo, and absolutely no fatty deserts.

it's a good way to loose weight quickly. but if you start eating dairy again you'll usually gain it back.

I look at it as something to be enjoyed. The main trick is finding motivation to get started, and afte that it becomes habit. I don't have much motivation to go anymore - aside from realising every now and then how fit I am - but I still do it out of habit. The key is forming one. Put together a small workout of bodyweight and running (the military does it in every country, it's good enough for you) and do it every day even if it just takes 20 minutes. Something, ANYTHING.

I think I'll be a namefag from now on. Or until it gets boring,

BAD IDEA. DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS MAN.

Eat dairy, just eat only the recommended daily allowances. Don't gorge yourself on cheese sticks.

God bless you, anon.

I'm SO glad that someone here knows that you dont need squatz and free weights to get fit. Oh thank god for old fashioned sense!

why eat dairy? it's not good for you, and it's not a necessity. Other mammals manage to ween their young, why can't we? That's why people become lactose intolerant, because our bodies aren't supposed to digest lactose.
it's only necessary for growing children. once you hit 13/14 you should quit.

I just take Judo. The competitive side of me drives me to work out better outside of class so I can compete better inside the martial arts class.

Also, football, basketball, any sport will work.

OP here, everyone has been really helpful (except for the anti-dairy guy).

A few questions:

1. On average, how many calories are burned per hour walking?

2. Should I buy into the whole 5-6 meals a day thing, or is it okay to stick to three squares with healthy snacks sprinkled throughout?

3. I need a good site with recipes for healthy meals/snacks. Anyone know a good one?

Thanks a lot

Not many calories.

As for meals, have 5-6 smalls. If you're working hard - and I do mean hard, during basic it was three huge meals a day, as much as you could eat until it was time to get up, for a 13 hour day and an extra 4 of sewing and all shit - go for the three biggies and nothing but water. But you're not, so have a few small meals instead.

No idea on meals, but try getting some pre-diced meat. Brown it, get a bag of frozen vegetables, cook them. Mix together, apply sweet chilli sauce and salt.
Eat.
HEY PRESTO. DINNER.

Humans are habitual, if you do something every day for 30 days, you will probably be able to do it forever, just know you can and do it.

1. If you're a man and you walk i'll laugh at you
2. Get used to mainly tiny protein packed+fruits and veggies with some strategic carbs and treats if you're a pansy...
3. It's simple, don't change the way you eat at all and just start writing down every single thing you eat, or take a picture of it with your phone, then calculate the calories and i bet you'll eat less just because you are thinking of having to record it, and "what gets measured gets improved" or so the japs say. Basically:

1. Protein every meal
2. Fruit and/or veggie every meal
3. no drinks with calories other then tea.
4. eat sensibly.
5. record what you eat and improve.

more small meals. gets your metabolism going. plus I run out of energy really quickly. I have a job walking 7 hours a day in a warehouse type setting and just walking i get drowsy a couple hours after lunch.

i have no idea how many calories you burn walking. If someone else knows I would love to find out.

1. http://walking.about.com/cs/howtoloseweight/a/howcalburn.htm Scroll down for a chart. Not exactly what you want, but better than nothing.
2. I have no idea. I think both would be OK. Whatever you can do to make your appetite decrease. Also: DOWN a tall glass of water before every meal and wait a minute or two before starting to eat.
3. http://worldshealthiestfoods.com/ Someone has recommended that to me. I'm not sure what to make of it, but that's exactly what it's supposed to be about.

fuck you guys. I hate dairy. Shit IS disgusting, full of pus and hormones.
I drink soy milk, which is a bit more expensive, but has more nutrients which helps me justify the price. Also, not gross. : D
