Does HIIT really work the way people say it does?
That after an intense 15 minutes of this shit you'll be burning 9 times more calories then you normally would for the rest of the day?

I've never seen proof, just unsubstantiated claims.

I want to believe it works, but I can't see how doing this twice a week is better for me then doing 45 minutes LISS 3x a week.
>> Anonymous
>45 mins, 3x a week

If your goal is to build muscle, why waist so much time? If your goal is to distance run, sounds great.

HIITs seem to work pretty good for me. But I didn't have much to loose either, so idk.

i've never done a tabata that was over 10 minutes, i must be doing something wrong, or you all are.

8 intervals 20 sec: 10 sec rest

I feel lightheaded after and then I jog back home.

I do this tuesdays and thursdays when I'm not hitting the gym.

Because your "max" at the start of the sprint would be radically different from the "max" at the end of the sprint. Plus it's better to do more smaller cycles, because HIIT IS ABOUT INTERVALS, NOT LET'S RUN TILL I CAN'T ANYMORE AND REST.

HIIT increases the resting metabolic rate (RMR) for the following 24 hours due to excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, and may improve maximal oxygen consumption (VO2 max) more effectively than doing only traditional, long aerobic workouts.[5][6][7][8] Long aerobic workouts have been promoted as the best method to reduce fat, as fatty acid utilization usually occurs after at least 30 minutes of training. HIIT is somewhat counter intuitive in this regard, but has nonetheless been shown to burn fat more effectively. There may be a number of factors that contribute to this, including an increase in RMR, and possibly other physiological effects.
From wiki. Your heart rate must always be at max in the high intensity interval. Sprinting is the best way to do so.

>> Anonymous
>>379057
That doesn't really make sense. How much are you decellarating?

'What's available' is subjective. The lazy find themself saying they are done and slowing down to 50 or 60% run speed.

the non lazy find themself dropping to 90% due to muscle lactic acid build-up and often find themselves throwing up during an intense session.

Which one are you?
>> Anonymous
>>379057So it doesn't count as HIIT if I sort of decelerate for the last 50 yards of my sprint, even though I'm still giving a 100% of whats available?

If I weighed 400 lbs and "gave my all" I still wouldn't really be sprinting now would I?
>> Anonymous
>>379071
Well honestly I'm not the 200 yard guy, I'm op and I did like 125 yards and I dropped to 90% right before getting to the end, maybe 20 or less yards.

>> Anonymous
>>379057

I didn't say it isn't HIIT, I'm just saying there's no way you're sprinting 200 yards. Unless you're an olympic athlete or something. I'm in pretty good shape and I get winded in less than 100 yards.
>> Anonymous
HIIT counts when you're hitting 80+% of your max heart rate and then dropping to 40-60% of your max heart rate. If you're such a fatass that light jogging gets you to 80+% of your max heart rate, and you slow down enough to get your heart rate down, you're doing HIIT.
>> Anonymous
>>379078
Because everyone is the same.
>> Anonymous
>>379076
Then that's fine. Honestly, most people don't understand HIIT. I found it hard to run 200 yards when I first did it. Fuck, that's a huge distance when you're not Usain Bolt doing it in 20 seconds. That's why you hear all these silly questions or people asking about doing 15 intervals to start. If you're doing HIIT, you can't do more than 4-5 intervals to start.

Just don't get into the trap of telling yourself you are spent when really you just want to start catching your breath.
>> Anonymous
>>379075
No, but your bacon clogged arteries would cause you to reach the target heart rate for this type of exercise anyways.

If your putting max effort, regardless of your fitness, age, size, then your body will respond in turn, won't it?

That being said, isn't it still HIIT, even if the person in question's intensity pales in comparison to your own?

>> Anonymous
Ok listen up faggots. There's different kinds of sprints. You can sprint 100m, 200m, and 400m. The 100m is considered a pure sprint, and relies almost entirely on the ATP-PCr energy system. This is the sprint where the most power can be generated. The 200m is a sprint, but starts to cross into another fuel system, and the straight ATP-PCr pathway is nearly depleted. Maximum sprint speed cannot be sustained and must partitioned. A 400m sprint is almost completely changed into the anaerobic glycolysis energy system. Max sprint speed must further be partitioned if the event is to be completed.

It's a matter of progression.
Most sites I go on seem to insist on 30 second sprints, but that shit is near impossible for most people.
The whole point is to shift your heart rate from about 130-150 to 180+ in a matter of moments.
You said what you did was hard, but you did it right?
So just keep it up.

You got to start somewhere, some people will end up doing just 2 or 3 sets to begin with before the collapse, and then they'll lose will and quit..

nice 4th grader comeback. Good job representing, anon.

So, to break this thread down, HIIT is when you get your heart rate to very high level (180+ bpm) for an interval, then take it down to a medium level (140ish bpm) for a similar interval. Rinse and repeat for as many sets as you can.

I got it right? I have a chest strap heart monitor, and have been able to get my heart to 180-190 on occasions during workouts but take it down thinking it wouldn't be good to be that high..
>> Anonymous
>>379842
Not same interval, rest periods must be longer.
>> Anonymous
>>379847

Rest _must_ be longer?

So 30 seconds at 180bps, then I thought it would be best to then go 140bps for 15 or 30 seconds - not more...

Did you typo? I need to know, I am going to try this, for my afternoon workout.
>> Anonymous
>>379854
Must be longer, and intervals shorter, people need to realize that more cycles with more effort is harder than less cycles with hard-medium effort.
I've read that there was a research and the best times were either 6/9 or 8/12.
>> Anonymous
>>379856
Harder effort*, not more effort.
>> Anonymous
>>379856

Are those ratios? I am not completely understanding you. English is not my main language, I must not be translating right..

Can you break it down for me? Give me an example of a workout, with time in seconds and beats per minute goal at each step.

Example, what I thought you needed was and you said was wrong:
30 seconds at 180bpm,
30 seconds at 140bpm,
repeat above steps as many times as possible, with expected first attempt being only 3 or 4 sets before failure (feeling like throwing up).

Thanks.

I read so many different "types" of HIIT. The one i'm currently doing is 30 seconds sprint 30 seconds jog (although the jog is usually more like a walk because i'm completely exhausted).

I wouldn't recommend the treadmill though.
Personally if I got it at a speed high enough to raise my bpm to 180 the shit is going way too fast and I could risk serious injury and humiliation, or if it isn't going fast enough I'm running into the platform.

Also trying to lower the speed while your in full sprint could be enough to make you lose your footing.

Someone yesterday or the day before was talking about how low intensity elliptical is - which bothered me since it's my favorite cardio item, and I can get my heart racing to 180 rather readily. I pull an hour workout on the elliptical with an average over that hour of 135-140. Today I am going to amend my workout so that I can test out HIIT feasibility. By the sounds of it, it burns fat more efficiently and for a longer period than a steady rate of effort. I'll try it.

Do you think you are truly sprinting if you are monitoring your heart rate? Fuck no.

tl;dr - Go fuck yourselves and your bullshit interval training, it is a complete waste of time complicating things with formulae when you can just enjoy your running instead.

If you'd bothered to read some of the thread instead of being a raging troll you'd see that amidst the misinformation there are quite a few people doing their best to give good advice and basically did say what you so eloquently reiterated.

Push your hardest, slow down, repeat until you can't push anymore.

I didn't bother reading this shit, i have seen it all year and i barely visit /fit/ now it has become even more of a shithole due to these threads. I am sick of seeing "i do HIIT for 15 minutes", its funny because these are the faggots using machines and never fucking push themselves out of their comfort zone. I used to use machines and tried what people would call "HIIT" on them, and it was a waste of fucking time whether i increased intensity or resistance. I try doing the same outdoors and it kicks my ass more than any workout, there is no way anyone on here, unless they are a proffessional athlete can come close to sustaining that workout for 15-20 minutes.

My point being is that HIIT, regardless of the studies shown is pointless if you are doing it on a machine or busy monitoring your heart rate with gadgets. As i said, put on your running shoes and just enjoy it.

Hey, that is exactly what I'm doing... I go out 3 times a week to my park and maybe do 5 intervals if I'm lucky before the urge to pass out and puke crushes my continued efforts.

I've also tried pushing this hard on a stationary bike and the shit almost toppled over.

But HIIT is about intensity, and as mentioned before intensity is relative to the person in question, if someone is 50lbs overweight then I bet they could easily get their bpm to 190 on a machine because they are pig disgusting and have to start somewhere.

In any event, if you see threads like this all the time then prepare yourself answers in a word document that doesn't involve raging and copypasta it each time you see it arise.

The cancer killing /fit/ isn't threads like this, it is people unwilling to be helpful, and the countless threads asking for reviews of supplements.

Couple months, maybe. I think for I'll just go to a park by my apartment. As for how much, I don't really know, all I know is the spare tire has to go, so if this will help I'll do it. I'm 5'8" 200 lbs (down from 225) and I want to keep going. I'm not a superathlete, nor do I really care to be, so if it's not quite as good on a treadmill, I don't care too much.

But why not give it a try outdoors?

I'm 5'6", 120 lbs, and I'm having a difficult time with HIIT. I can only do around 2 of 20 sec. intervals with 60 sec. jog/walk in between before my sprints become jogs and my jogs become walks. Then I had to stop after my 4th interval feeling dizzy and lightheaded.

It's ok anon, he'll still be fat in a few months and come on here raging about how HIIT is bullshit... Then you can rage hard.

No you did not get trolled. I'm serious. My body seems skinny except for around my waist, where I have a nice beer belly developing. I get tired pretty easily so I'd thought some HIIT would help evaporate my belly-in-development and help improve my health overall.

Back on topic: I did eat some chocolate and fruits 30-45 min. before starting (glucose heavy foods). Am I doing something wrong?
