roughly: whey is a rapidly absorbed protein. It's cheap. It's effective. It's usually low fat. If you aren't looking to start a protein closet just simple pure whey will do just fine. You want to eat it right before or right after you workout(people will say different shit) because it is digested quickly.
Muscle milk has a lot of different proteins in it. It tends to be higher in fat/calories etc. Depending on where you are coming from that may or may not be an issue. It is absorbed slower and can be used effectively at other times during the day.
