/fit/, I never actually learned to swim. I'm a senior in high school.

What do I do?

Learn to swim?

jump in and flail about madly until you either learn or die

or go to your local YMCA and sign up for some fucking swimming lessons

it's strange to me that there are people who can't swim. i took swimming lessons at the Y when i was like 5 and we used to go to the beach all the time.

Honestly? Do what I did.

Get out on a boat on a nice lake and just jump off the back. Swimming is a instinctual thing, you do know how to swim, but it's hard to learn in a small pool because there are edges that you naturally go to. Be sure to have someone that does know how to swim just in case you get into trouble though.

The whole concept of not being able to swim _at all_ strikes me as alien as well.

When you live in the city, it's understandable, but when you live in a town with a lake nearby, then it's just a "lol whut"-situation.

EVERYONE CAN SWIM. IT'S JUST A MATTER OF FLAILING ABOUT IN THE WATER IN AN ORDERED FASHION.

Swimming is basically this:

Kicking or thrusting your legs while pulling the water in front of you with your hands and arms. Well not so much pulling but...sorta.

sign up for swimming lessons somewhere, or ask your mates to give you pointers.

swimming requires almost daily practice to maintain a level of skill, especially for adults who never learnt as children (such as myself)

Actually, has a lot more to do with not drowning.

Swimming is pretty easy. As long as you have some air in your lungs and you're not flailing around like a retard, swimming will come naturally.

Dude, I learned to swim before I learned to run without smacking my face into the floor. Once you've got it, you'll never forget it.

don't bother, just float on your back and kick

umm, swimming is quite easy. Just get in a pool somewhere, go into the water while holding onto the edge. I'd say first try out going underwater holding your breath, then let go of the edge to realise that you're not going down... Then push the water down to get your head above the surface and you're done.. you're swimming. hurray.
Just look at others swimming to see how the techniques work, breast is the easiest imo so go for that when you feel comfortable.
To swim fast/long, you require lots of training like most other people, so don't get frustrated if you don't initially. Go to a swimming club if you intend to get good at swimming, but I warn you, it will be very tiresome.

Only blacks cannot swim

I learnt swimming when I was 21. The key I think is not to be scared when you are in the water.

Pfah. I swim like I was born for that shit, and I'm a liberian Bassa "tribechild" straight out of Africa. No coastal african has any problems with it anyway, I'll say that.
