If I suddenly started eating 1200 calories a day, my metabolism would slow down to the point where my weight loss (note I said weight loss, not necessarily just fat loss) would come to a halt.
Also, the idea that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie is flawed. If that were true, you could just eat 2000 calories of chocolate bars and with a sound exercise regimen, end up with six pack abs and 2% body fat. Starch, sugar, fat, protein are all metabolized differently.
