He doesn't have to do much. Make him cut out soda, and working out for an hour or so a day.
If he has the problem I have/had, it's that working out is Fucking boring as Fuck, and most gyms cost money so that you can dress in shitty clothes and have fit,healthy people make fun of you till you get fit or sit on their skinny bodies and kill them with your fat.
My advice: Have him cut out soda and any drinks besides water and flavored water. If he does that, he'll lose a few pounds in a month or so. Also, have him eat small, COOKED(not stuff in bags/fast food/etc.) every two hours, or small(like one scoop of ice cream small) deserts. This keeps his metabolism burning fat.
Second, make him buy a nintendo wii. have him play wii sports or something that makes you jump around to play for an hour or two per day.
Shit about eating 'good' or 'less' is bullshit, unless you're dumping whole chocolate cakes down your throat every hour. The only 'Bad' food for you is when you over-abuse something(only eating bread-products like Ramen and Pasta), and things with Trans-fats.
Counting Calories will only make him feel worse cause he'll freak out over the tiny servings he thinks he can have,and he won't do it.
