Running outside vs running on treadmill

pros and cons of each?
>> Anonymous
Treadmill: works in rain/snow/ice, more convenient
Outside: Better workout, more interesting, fresh air, sun, etc...

I do a treadmill because it forces me to keep a steady pace. I'm not exactly built for running, more for lifting heavy things and throwing them around.

Treadmill: easier to track stats, constant pace, can play games or something to pass time

Outdoors: More interesting, fresh air, sights.

Running Outside:
Pros: potentially useful (chores, a job, whatever), natural sun, you get to show off if your actually buff enough to do so, and you meet people as well.
Cons: Weather Dependant, you can run when its almost freezing, but its harder on your lungs and body. Theres no way to gauge how many calories your burning directly, although a lot of people can say its useless to know that information.

Treadmill
Pros: you know exactly how fast your going (most treadmills measure in MPH) and how many calories your burning, many treadmills have a heartrate monitor as well. You can watch tv while on a treadmill, which helps burn time.
Cons: Good treadmills are expensive, you are indoors the whole time, gym memberships are definitely more costly than running outside.

I'd say both are awesome, but outside can potentially be more fulfilling (paper route? for money?)

> how many calories your burning
Those counters are never accurate. There are too many factors including stuff like running gait that can't just be entered into the machine.

Treadmills cost money.

Save your stupidity for /b/.

running on a threadmill is the most boring activity ever

outside when possible, treadmill when outside is too rainy, cold, hot, whatever.

also, use a treadmill if you wanna gauge how fast you can run for how long, more scientific. but for just plain old running outside is probably easier. if you ran a mile from your house, you have to get back, forced exercise :-p

Outside-
pros: sunshine, harder workout, inexpensive
con: weather, people can see you(I was self conscious at first), higher injury

treadmill-
Pros: can watch TV, good for beginners, No excuse not to do it
cons:expensive, can fall off, takes up space(If you have a small living area), noisy

actually i find running outside so boring and pointless it kills my soul. i mean. walking in spaces is a tool. something you do to go somewhere. it doesn't make any sense to run without a destination, it'd be like flipping a switch connected to nothing for like 1 hour. at least the treadmill gives you some challenge.

Same here. I used to hate it when I was pressured into talking walks around the neighborhood because it was such a waste of time when I could be doing better exercises inside.

For people who like the stats of a treadmill, but want some sunshine, get a Garmin. I got a 305 for under $200, and I love the damn thing. The 405 just came out and it is a lot smaller (the 305 is XBox hueg), but it's a lot more money.

The big problem I find with the treadmill is the whole "indoor" thing. When I run I tend to get gassy and need to spit. Therefore I end up running in my own farts, although it feels like I'm running away from it, I'm really not. Although the treadmill is better for the knees, its just not as good.

One of the great benifits of running outside is that you're running though air. It provides a little bit of resistance which helps, but mostly it cools you off. You can imitate it by useing a fan but it's just not the same, there's no feedback.

ITT: people who cant afford tredmills who wont admit to the fact that tredmills are scientifically better on your shins and knees.

Running on rubber conveyor belt and getting the same workout without any risks > running on cement with risks of damaging your knees / shins.

running outside wins:
I can run for 31 miles on trails with no unusual problems, I get bored to death after 2 miles on a treadmill

Isn't that a really fat person thing?

You're still putting the same amount of impact on your knees if you run improperly. I'ts how you run not what you run on.

run on dirt, that's even better. or better yet, get some actual running shoes that work for you. Also, there's no real issues with running in wind/rain/snow/heat/night. just dress and hydrate accordingly.

Because it's a smoggy wasteland outside and there aren't any nearby parks.

I use the treadmill on the weekdays and run outside on the weekends. Usually the treadmill is the choice because it allows me to catch up on reading or current events.
