Whats different is they apply some sort of burn to the side of your nail. it prevents it from growing back there. You don't feel a thing.

I used to cut diagonal into the nail and pull the fragment out with my fingers, like minor surgery, push around the swollen flesh and dig out the arrowhead of the nail fragment, all the while blood was rushing over my hands and toe, puss, etc into the sinks running water. Had to do this every week, or every 3 days.
I was so stupid I lived with this problem for 3 years, toe nail removal, then it'd grow back, and I'd wait a couple of months before I go see the doctor again.
If you caught some sort of infection from a pool in Chicago during the late 90's, sorry, that was me. I used to go swimming with that toe.
