cycling at a high intensity burns a crapload of calories, its good cardio, will strengthen muscles in the legs quite well, all i did for years was cycle and my legs were strong as hell when i got older.
great thing with cycling is it's good for rehabbing the knees, my dad has torn his ligaments in both knees and through cycling has rehabbed them, he still plays sport today @ 50+ years old
