Machines tend to focus on the major muscle, because of the pre-determined motion the machine has, it has no range and it's not natural. When the motion isn't natural and is fixed, there is no need for your muscle to stabalize or balance the weight loud like you would when you naturally lift something. Muscles that help obtain such stability are called Stabalizers. The most important stabalizing muscles in the body are found in legs, ofcourse. So when you use a smith machine, there is no need for forward and backwards stability, which is totaly un natural, especially considering your legs Need stabalizers like no other limb to keep your entire body balanced.
It doesn't mean that you will fall over if you work out on a smith machine for a year, but it's not nearly as quality as a workout as a deadweight squat with a barbell not attacked to anything.
