Among the 14 studies that compared zinc lozenges, nasal sprays, and nasal gels against a placebo, the authors found only 4 that they considered well designed and well conducted. Three of these studies found no benefit from zinc lozenges or nasal sprays, and only one study reported some benefits from zinc nasal gel. The authors conclude that, overall, there have been surprisingly few good scientific studies on this topic, and those that are valid haven't generally supported the benefits of zinc in reducing the duration of common colds.
