How good is it for you? Compared with running, that is.
And by good for you, I mean VO2 max and weight loss, muscle building (primarily calves, obviously) and general health.

I'm not sure how to answer your question. If you want like an exact figure stating how much more or less effective it is compared to running, you're out of luck.

Jumping rope is definitely effective so long as you use it correctly. Mix-up standard jumping with doubles, hopping on one leg, running in place with the rope, "sprinting" with it, etc.

Aside from your calves, you'll also feel it like a mother in your quads, and if you're getting it around fast enough, you'll feel it in your shoulders and triceps too.
I have much stronger legs than I do shoulders; when I first started doing interval training with a rope, my shoulders gave out way before my legs or my cardiovascular system.

Because it gives your upper body and your core something to do.

the cool 'whooosh' sound the rope makes as it whips along is also crucial for the exercise. It makes you stronger just by its coolness.

Double-unders are decent for some conditioning work, but that's really the limit of jumping rope. If you want to get into all the cool tricks, that takes a lot of skill practice, and it isn't much better than double-unders in terms of exercise. It just looks cool.

If you can manage triple-unders... Those things are beasts...

I thik it's around 0.2 calories per jump and is almost as good as running, but not quite.
