You don't have to divide it into "fat or muscle". Just start walking a lot then when you feel froggy go for a job or hit up that treadmill until you feel out of breath, walk for a bit, and hit it up again. If you get intimidated by workouts with complex moves like starting strength you can always fall back on doing simple shit like dips, pullups (deadhang goddamn), pushups, burpees, overhead presses, hanging leg raises, box jumps (just jumping in general), broad jumps, bicycles, roman chair situps. The simple shit will suffice for those days where you can't wrap your head around the technique but you would be a fool to pass up starting strength, stronglifts, etc. Deadlifts are the easiest and safest once you understand the form, so you can always start with it (said to develop speed even more than the squat). Just go out there and always do something, that's the trick. Don't let the information stop your workouts but always look to improve your form.
