sup /fit/,

I asked my friend to take a video of him doing bench presses because he wanted my opinion on his form. For those of you that can be bothered to download the video, would I be right in saying he's doing it way too quickly and too lightly? He's 17 and weighs 63kg (139lb) and those dumbbells are 17.5kg (38.5lb) each. He's still pretty much an amateur, but he says he hasn't got any heavier dumbbells for now. I still think he really needs to do fewer reps with heavier weights.

Also, aren't the dumbbells supposed to go all the way down to his chest before its pressed up again?

First of all, I know the weight is light, but he needs to lift them up with his legs, not his back.

From what I have been told and through experience, you should lower the weight to just past when your upper arms are horizontal...just like he is doing.

Finally, he needs more weight. Doesnt matter what his goal is (size/strength), he needs to rep to exhaustion.

like this.

Also, this.

When using greater weight, you ready them on your thighs, then 'kick' them up to your chest. Then lay down on the bench with the weight ready to be lifted...preventing any back injury and allowing you to not need a spotter

I have the same York dumbbells as the guy in the vid. I don't think its possible to do that with those dumbbells because the spinlock digs into the thigh, it's not completely flat.

I noticed, but they are light, so this form isnt needed, yet.

When you get serious and start moving up in weight, plan on using better form

The slower he reps, the more difficult it will be...plus it looks like he is going so fast that when he locks out his elbow joints, it seems almost painful

He needs more weight.

Also, it doesnt matter what his goal is (size/strength), he needs to rep to exhaustion.

what is the good weight for doing most of exercises ?
I use 2 x 14 Kg and I will change soon and lift 2 x 16 Kg, cause I am accustomed.

I mean, since what weight are we sure to be efficient ?

>>he needs to rep to exhaustion.

this is the part i have the issue with. if you hit exhaustion you have long since stopped recruiting motor units so you're not actually doing yourself any good. about three sessions of this and you will start to detrain, meaning you will actually lose strength and size.

technical failure is the only one you should approach, and then not even really.
