Its because OP, your running faster outside then on the ellipitical. Truth is, its easier to run on a machine then it is to run outside. Your body has to adjust to the elevation, the wind etc. making it harder for you to sustain your rate. Either that or you just need to build up your endurance and if its that, I recommended a dosage of HIIT 3 times a week.
