To Smoke Or Not To Smoke Anonymous
Sup /fit/. I don't know where to post this but I think this board is the best place to get an opinion. I've been fighting a lot with my gf lately and it's making me feeling pissed off, very depressed etc. and I have this sudden urge to take up smoking. I don't intend to smoke like donkey's ass but maybe like 1 cig a month or less frequently. I can see that a couple of cigs a day is normal for a regular smoker, I don't want to be like that. I just need something to get my mind off depression.

Have anyone smoke this seldomly? Is it possible? I heard ciggies are very addictive for a first-timer. Is it worth a shot? I don't want to be an hero but I know smoking is like killing yourself slowly (lol an hero in bullet time). If its not, any other ways to cheer me up?

This sounds familiar. On average I smoke one cigarette every 3 months, usually under periods of extreme stress.

If you live in a city, your getting worse shit in your lungs EVERY DAY, so averaging 1 cig a month is fine in my opinion.
That being said, most people seem prone to getting very addicted, so just make sure you don't make it a habit.

Alternative: Break up with the source of your depression.

Alternative 2: Go to a Hookah bar. Less convenient than carrying a pack of cigarettes, so you won't do it every day. Also more fun and can be done socially with non-smokers.

Alternative B: Soundproof a closet and yell in it until you get polyps.

Don't be weak. Make changes in your life you need to to stay healthy. Whatever that means is up to you to figure out.

I smoke every once in a while. Helps calm me down when I get huge anxiety fits. This is only like every few months. But I usually go through a few at a time. I've had the same pack for a while though, which I usually just give to my smoker friends.

OP here. Thanks for replying. I wouldn't want to break up with my gf since we've only been together for like, a month. I think I'm being depressed is because I'm too submissive. Usually an argument starts out with me feeling down because of her, then she would ask why and I'd just avoid answering it. Then she'd be pushing it too hard and starts to get angry. Seeing its going in that direction, I'd just explain to her (in a very calm and tact manner, in a matter of fact). She'd then gets even angrier. Then I'd apologize to her like a million times for making her feel that way and try my best to calm her down. Regardless of how hard I try, she stops talking to me and tells me that she needs some space and asks me to leave her alone for a few days. *sigh*

I don't know, maybe its normal for a chick to be so self-centered. I'm still not sure to pick up a cig though.

You know this is a rationalization. You're just going to have one a month, right? Mhmm. Then it'll be two a month, and you'll only 'remember' that it's your second of the month after you've lit the second one. And then you'll just give up, because you're an emo kid, and become a pack a day smoker.

Basically, you're just looking for someone to say, 'Yes, it's okay to start smoking.' No, it isn't. I'm the same raging anon that made the 'Reasons why fatties are bad' thread, it's also on the front page of /fit/ right now. Fat people cost the health care system money, and smokers do too.

lol Is it that obvious? Well, she is my first gf though. Fair advice though. One more question. How would someone tolerate seeing their ex every single day? I mean, we've been going out for just a month but we've been really close friends prior to that. I don't think its possible for me -not- to see her everyday since we're studying in the same small and secluded A-Levels college which is more or less like a boarding school in many ways. I think it would be best to talk to her but I don't know how to do it. Any advice would be great.

You are in a shitty situation. You have, in effect, shit where you eat. People make this mistake all the time, especially in the workplace.

The damage is done for your relationship, so now you have to work on an effective exit strategy. I'm not sure what to suggest, because I avoid situations like these by default, for exactly this reason. But what I strongly urge you to do is not give in to the temptation to drop away from attending your classes or social gatherings because she might be there. Don't crumble. That will just make everything worse - she'll start talking about how weak you are to all her friends, and you'll feel even more sad and reclusive. Maybe you could just try acting detatched and cool around her? Try acting like Squall. Think... 'whatever.'

It's awkward at first. But sometimes the friendship won't suffer as much as you'd think. You may remain friends right away, or you might just have to deal with awkwardness for a month or two until it fixes itself. It's not going to be as hard since you two haven't been dating for that long. Plus if you don't make the break up all dramatic and shit then there won't be a lot of damage done in the end.

OP here. I know I can't skip my classes because it would hurt my grades since I'm lazy as fuck about studying. Thanks a lot for the help though. I think I'll just shelf the thought about smoking and sort out my life first.

I started out smoking like OP suggested. Now I smoke almost daily, I generally don't buy cigarettes often but people offer them quite often and after a while it's hard to turn them down. Though I do have a rather apathetic approach about it, I do know some casual smokers who have achieved that.

Trust me it's not like you're gonna have cravings unless you smoke daily for at least a month or two.
You could just try it if you're curious, most likely you wont really like it anyway, it only gets good after the first few packs.

Find a healthier method of stress relief. Like exercise. Channel all your RAAAAAAAAAAGE into something like running or lifting, and profit by gaining a better looking body in the first place.

I smoke everytime i go to a party or a club, because it helps me loosen up immideately, unlike alchohol. Which means i smoke about 4 ciggarettes a month. And i've gone without smoking for 3-4 months and didn't have any sort of cravings.

Rule of thumb is that more than 5 a week and a you'll get addicted. Which sucks because when you get addicted you won't get that awesome buzz. And it will cost you around 2k a year.

i might go six months without, then have a few in one night of drinking, another month off, and then one every few days for a month... not everyone will become addicted to every addictive substance. though, you're more likely to get hooked if you use it specifically as a coping mechanism.

that being said, each and every one you smoke is bad for you, and the less you smoke cumulatively over your life the better shape your lungs are likely to be in.

Every person I know that started off only smoking a few a month/week/whatever is now a full-time smoker. There is not one good reason to smoke and a million good reasons not to.

Doing power lifting with near a near 1RM weight has a similar effect, but punching a boxing bag is more awesome imo.


As for the relationship. I personally know a few pairs like that. All of them are divorced now, so you pretty much get the idea. Believe me, if its like this on the first month, then it will go to the shitter fast and the last few months or so will be hell. And I'm pretty darn school that this would destroy your schooling as well.

Smoke cigars. Some buzz, and you won't get addicted. And it tastes great. Very relaxing and soothing.
