so /fit/ got a question.

i like to run, although i havent been running enough this summer, possibly like 1 6mile run a week tops, anyway the last couple of times i went running, my calves/ankles get extremely tight, and the ends of my feet around the toes, and the toes themselves start tingling and almost going numb. about every mile or so ill have to stop and stretch my legs to get the tingling to go away for a while.

is this because of the muscle tightness?
if not what is the cause?
is this something i should be worried about?
maybe go see a doctor?
or is this just something that will go away with proper stretching and more exercise?

nope, they fit just fine.

and its usually just in the right foot, not so much in the left.

I also have some tingling/numbness in my toes. It's possible it's Morton's Neuroma, but that would not explain the calves/ankles.

I suggest if the symptoms persist just go to a doctor. Also, make sure you are thoroughly stretching after each run.

Make sure your shoes are the right size, are not worn out, and consider getting some insoles.

also the area i live in is extremely hilly so im sure that would explain the muscle tightness, but would the muscle tightness cause tingly toes?

It's most likely your shoes aren't a proper fit. And I don't mean that they're not the right size. When you start running long distances (and while 16 per week isn't ridiculous, it's still a fair bit for most) the type of shoes you run in make a huge difference. I used to have ridiculous pain in my shins when I ran, so I went to Fleet feet and found a pair of shoes that correct my stride; I have high arches and tend to overpronate. I bought a nice pair of Asic Kayanos and haven't had problems since.

My guess is that you pronate, which is causing ankle pain, and your heel isn't high enough, which is impacting your calves. You might need something like a heel insert or just go spend the 100 bucks for a nice pair of running shoes.
