kick power Anonymous
Hello,
I'm a soccer player looking to improve the striking power of my non-dominant leg. Plyometric exercises are a given, but I'm also considering buying a heavy bag to kick the shit out of at home. Since it works for martial artists, I don't see why it won't work for me. any thoughts?

sure, why not... it'll do more for your other leg's endurance though

I wouldn't recommend it. There's a reason baseball players practice hitting baseballs instead of just whacking away at a heavy bag with a bat.
You'd be a lot better off just strengthening your legs and your core in general, and practicing by actually kicking soccer balls.
If you kick a heavy bag, you're practicing a different movement, and you won't get any of the follow through because the bag will stop your foot.

instead of buying a heavy bag, buy 5, 10, and 15 pound medicine balls and kick the shit out of them.

well, first kick the 5 pound ball until you can wail it like a soccer ball, then the 10, then the 15, then you go back to a soccer ball and can kick it at 90 miles an hour.

just don't practice head-butting these balls.

Strength usually isn't the limiting factor when hitting baseballs or kicking a soccer ball. It's foot/bat speed, which are determined by how fast you're muscles fire. You're right about actually kicking the ball, which I already do, but I feel like I've hit a plateau and my cns is holding me back.

Hanging leg raises, strength lifts like the deadlift with sport appropriate stretching.
