Anyone here swim regularly? Right now, I do 60 laps without stopping, 4 days a week. I want to increase it though since it doesn't really feel like enough. How many laps do you do per trip to the pool, or how many is recommended for a serious swimmer per day?

Ok, anyone have any insight into my question?

# of laps is a useless measurement. all pools are different sizes and if you ask an actual swimmerfag theyll tell you their yardage, not their number of laps.

these are decent for a beginner. thousand pace for you will be really slow and not trying hard: http://ruthkazez.com/50swimworkouts.html

if youre measuring your swimming based on laps you probably wont understand a lot of the drills in the workouts. the common ones are explained here: http://www.mvm.org/workouts-drills.php

some things you might need to know about the first workout:
pull = no kicking
hypoxic = just the name of what follows
1/3 = one breath every three strokes, etc
1 length typically equals 25 meters or yards

also, start measuring your workouts in yards or meters (whatever your pool happens to be. ask the lifeguard or another swimmer)

Shitballs, that was stupid of me. Sorry, the pool I'm referring to is 25 metres a lap. So 1.5 kilometres every time I go.

And you don't use your ankle when you breaststroke? What are you talking about?

who the girl with Phelps?

Not in the same way, I mean when I do the kicking motion with the bottom of my feet facing upwards and flapping it up and down. In breast stroke, it's gentler, if you get my meaning.

watch this vid ( http://www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title=1284277022 ) and grab one of those pull buoys. watch how they kick their legs. that how often i kick during workouts without a pull buoy. most casual swimmers kick way too much. kicking is mainly for racing in freestyle. their hips carry the majority of their propulsion. if you twist your hips like you see those swimmers doing youll hardly have to kick.

Be a man and finish the 1650 (mile)

A hurt ankle really shouldn't stop you from doing freestyle. Just kick less.

Break up your workout, create a real workout, such as a ladder, and create various types of rests in between each set. Will do a lot more for your cardiovascular system.

serious swimmers go to the pool 2x per day, every day and do from 4000-6000 yards per day, depending on whether they're doing sprint work or distance swimming

Phelps may be heralded as like the best olympic athlete ever... but at least I can take solace in that I don't look that weird.

If you're just getting into it, this is okay for beginning.

But, as other posters have mentioned, you'll need to more eventually. Push yourself.

You should be able to do that 1500m in under 30 minutes.
