I'm looking to get some more excercise in. At the moment I only play football(Yurop rules) and I was thinking of taking up a martial art. Kendo looks quite interesting and enjoyable, I was thinking of taking it up.

So /fit/, your thoughts on Kendo? Failing that, what are your thoughts on the martial arts in general and what would you recommend in particular?

I've done it for 2 years now, and it's probably one of the best things in my life, but not necessarily for fitness sake. For a while, it keeps you semi-fit and always using/builing certain muscle, but after some point, it really stops becoming physical and more mental. At some point too, it stops making you sore and simply becomes more cardio than anything since your muscles can only be built up so much from a shinai and bodyweight.

But when you get to that point, you feel like a warrior finally because once-difficult maneuvers become whimsically easy. There isn't a point in kendo where you stop learning, where hard things all of a sudden become easy and then a thousand more hard things show up to challenge your abilities to learn. In short, I love kendo, but maybe it's just because I play it intercollegiately and practice with my peers.

I would hardly call it a martial art to begin with, it was more of a sport for me. Kendo competition is based on point system and there's hardly any real life application to it. If you want fitness and a 'real' martial art. i'd advise you to do any striking(boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, kyokushin karate) or grappling (judo, BJJ, sambo, G.R. wrestling, catch wrestling) all of these will get you in shape. and actually help you defend yourself better if you ever need to.

you try running up and down the entirety of a gym floor, hunched over, cleaning it with a small rag. If you're perfectly fine afterwards then no, you won't get much exercise out of this. Go join a decathlon for kicks.

I'm coming around to this idea. But where should I begin? I've found a few nearby Kendo clubs that practice Kendo, but should I invest in anything else e.g. books?

I'm having trouble finding about equipment costs, how much am I looking at spending?

Most clubs should let you have a free trial lesson. I hope you're trolling when you say books. If you join you'll start out as a rankless scrub. Your instructors will teach you the basics and then DRILL FOR THE HEAVENS. Cost wise expect on the upwards of $1000 for equipment and fees

It's only over $1000 if you spring for the carbon shinais and full on body/head/hand armor. Until you reach the equivalent of a purple belt in skill and the right to spar you shouldn't need any more equipment than two practice swords and maybe the long pants.
