What's weird about wanting to look normal?
I can't see them YET. I've only been going to the gym for about a week.
And why should I stop using machines? My workout session is for overall fitness I guess but I'd like to make it more abs oriented.

Not to sound like a cynic here but previous experience in the matter leads me to believe you are on a bunch of machines including the elliptical. Free weights cause your body to enact it's stabilizing muscles, the most important of which is the core muscles. Far more than the top layer you see the core is used heavily when you have heavy weight overhead. If you are truly after general fitness then you don't want to simply learn how to pull on cables or spin some pedals or do you?
