I did Atkins in true form for about 4 months, and for weight loss it was great. Reality was that I felt crappy due to the lack of bursting energy. I was living, burning fat, etc - but it really felt like I had aged a lot while on it.
I did it pretty hard core, limited myself to 20 carb grams a majority of the days. Pretty tight, given that even a small salad has 3 or 4, 1oz cheese or an egg has 1.
Other than the lack of energy thing, another negative was the stank breath it gives you when you are into heavy ketosis. The people that knew and loved me said it smelled like I was shitting out of my mouth. Atkins addresses this by saying you should then take in more carb grams daily to go to a lighter state of ketosis. Ehh.
To the anon that said even a dorito will remove you from ketosis - wrong. mostly. Your body will always burn the easiest form of energy, which is carb stores (glycogen I think?). Any carb intake while in ketosis gets gets burned first. That chip or handful won't take more than moments to burn. I remember binging on some amazing birthday cake while I was Atkinsing. I took me sometime less than 48 hours to regain ketosis (as verified by urine strip test). So Atkins cheats should/could be followed with exercise to burn off the carbs.
To the Fat OP: KISF. Don't make a lot of huge changes, you'll never keep to the plan. Drink water, exercise better/more, and eat better.
I like other anons am curious as to why an ex-football player doesn't know. I would think a meathead would know how to pack muscle on. More muscle means more calorie upkeep. Maybe you were a bench player? Maybe you only jerked off to high school football players? Whatever.
Not sure why no one has mentioned it, but squats are favored here, and the stronglifts 5x5 is the favored plan. I do not follow this personally, but others have and like it.
