hits the nail on the head. find someone to teach you the form properly or look on youtube for respectable intructional videos (there are a few).

It's the best low impact "cardio" you can possibly do. Amazingly simple, incredibly brutal.

5K in 27 minutes is slower than my 5'3 110lb girlfriend rows a 5K... you're doing something horribly wrong, or you are incredibly out of shape.

tldr; Learn form, then row row fight the powah

as a rower since high school, i'd like to say that>>351023has it exactly right. I just got off my rowing machine in fact...it kicks your ass, but is well worth the effort. You REALLY need to get someone to coach you for the first couple times, even if you feel like you know what you are doing.

As for times and distances, it depends heavily on your height and gender. Taller people generally have an easier time with rowing because of the length they can generate on the stroke. There are tables and other resources online if you get serious about training.

don't get discouraged, your times will drop quickly. get your form locked in before everything else, start slow, then build it up. use the concept2 website as a resource and training guide.
