Taking an ice bath after a workout, rather than a hot shower. Anonymous
so, anyone ever done that? sounds interesting, but also scary, youd probly get such extreme shrinkage the whole thing would get sucked in lololololol

What to do: Fill your bathtub with 6 inches of water, dump in a tray or two of ice cubes, and slither in. Make sure the water covers your heels, Achilles tendons, calves, hamstrings, and buttocks-the places most likely to feel tight after a long day at the gym. Stay in for 5 to 10 minutes. Says physical therapist and ice bather, Clint Verran, "The first few minutes are agonizing. Most times I bite into a towel. But it's effective, and you'll feel a noticeable difference in your muscles the next day."

going through 10 agonizing minutes of pain and discomfort in order to relieve a slight soreness the next day? totally worth it.

look up contrast showers

I assume that the decreased soreness means that you can perform better.

Ice baths and contrast showers are similar to body tempering. It's good for your immune system and it's also a great trick for further revving up your metabolism.

Here's a webpage:

But also do a google search for "body tempering".

"The idea that Tempering will kill any virus and aid the immune system immediately is true, the sudden exposure to the cold is like a small nuclear explosion in your body that raises the temperature inside your body to nearly 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42.2 degrees Celsius). This mini-explosion will kill of most bacteria and viruses because of the overall body temperature, they cannot handle it and it is just to hot for them to survive."

Holy shit, is this true?

No. It's utter rubbish.

what about hot baths then? are they good or bad? or sauna?

108 degrees F will cook your brain. That is why fevers can be so deadly...

No, you can't kill a virus, because it becomes a part of your DNA. If it could kill those things, it would kill all of your other cells too.

I've been following the basic idea of tempering for 2 years now, in just hot water showers finished off by the coldest water setting possible. I wouldn't say tempering will kill all viruses and bacteria, but what I have noticed is that I've been sick less since I started, although that can be attributable to overall better quality lifestyle choices I started around the same time.

When you finish off with cold water, you'll notice when you step out of the shower and dry off that you'll start sweating buckets. Homeostasis is kicking in, trying to bring your cold body temperature up. The most rapid way to do this is to raise body temperature past 98.6 degrees to fever level. Having a prolonged fever is bad, but all a fever is is a natural defense mechanism of the body to cook off illnesses. Eventually, since exposure to the cold was short, homeostasis returns you body to normal very quickly.

a UFC fighter (i can't remember the name off the top of my head) who would do an entire like hour long weight training circuit with his nose plugged and wearing a snorkel then jump into a barrel of ice water, he said it cut down his recovery time by several days

So he didn't breath while training. Yeah right.

I don't know bout that snorkel shit, but alternating between hot and cold water is a proven way of reducing recovery time from intense anaerobic exercise. Sauce below:

Contrast water immersion hastens plasma lactate decrease after intense anaerobic exercise.
