actually op is correctthe average person's diet contains enough protein to help build muscle. The extra protein a person consumes is not used to build muscle, in fact its not used at all. The reason protein shakes have been so successfully sold is in part due to marketing and the fact that the shakes are usually consumed before a person works out. They think the protein is helping them build muscle but its really not doing anything.

I am a Registered Dietitian and I can guarantee you with full confidence that whey protein does not have the effects it promises. It is just like any other food, it does not magically help muscles to grow bigger from extra protein intake. Extra protein intake over 25% of your total calories for the day can cause severe damage.. I would think twice before putting your bodies through hell. Nothing but placebo effect -- Find any study that actually has proof that whey protein is better then normal nutritious foods.. that's right you will not find any.
