Greetings from across the cultural gap,

I have not spent a significant amount of time in here with you /fit/ folks, and as with many lu/r9k/ers I am terribly unfit and unhappy with my life, though I tend do to nothing about it.

Personally, I have a hard time picking my life up and completely changing it because of assumed public perception. I would like to know then, what does /fit/ think of complete newbs who just show up at the gym one day, looking very out of place? If you picked yourself up one day and did a 180, please share your experience.

I don't know where to begin getting healthy/in shape/less fat, so I am feeling this out.

90% of the people who go to the gym are complete newbs. you'll fit right in.

now stop making excuses and go do something about it, fatty.

Nice to have you here,

I have a lot of respect for people who are willing to make changes in their lives, especially when they are proactive towards their health. So don't worry about feeling out of place, we were all n00bs at one point. The important thing is to just show up, you can't get anything done unless you actually go.

The best advice right now for you is to lurk moar, OL and IRL. So start here: <http://www.exrx.net/Beginning.html>.

you gotta start somewhere bro'

I don't know wat you want to work on. If you're fat, then start with cardio and diet to lose weight (the basics, eat minimum 3 meals a day, make sure you're eating about 500 less calories per day than you need, etc).

If you want to get moar mussels, try stronglifts.com
That guy basically has his own version of Starting Strength (a good book on getting stronger) and also Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle (another good book on diet).

If you have more specific questions, ask.

Also go to a real board. r9k is pretty lame

By way of the illustrious ZC, an internet hero who is missing in action, I present to you his /fit/ FAQ.

1. I want to lose weight.
I want to be thinner.
I want to lose these love handles.
I want to burn off extra fat.
I want to tone up.
What/how much should I eat in order to lose weight?

ANSWER: Do you want to lose WEIGHT? or do you want to lose FAT? In order to lose fat:

You must count your calories, and consume foods that your body needs. Your body does not need a * avalanche of carbs smashing through your cakehole at all hours of the day. Cut down on sweets, oils, and unnecessary white starches. Huge helpings of pasta, rice, and white-bread sandwiches are out.

Eat whole wheat bread and pasta, oatmeal, fresh fruits and vegetables, lowfat/fat free dairies, and lean meats such as chicken/turkey breast, fish, etc. One classic staple is the garden vegetable/chicken breast salad. Satisfying, healthy (garden greens are extremely nutritious), and cheap.

You should aim to eat five or six smaller meals a day. This keeps the body in a state of constant metabolism. It takes energy to digest food. Eating three big squares a day lets your body settle into a routine, digesting one big lump and then remaining dormant for hours until the next meal.

Also? Never eat or drink anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup again. Ever again. Every time you drink a soda (HFCS), you create an insulin spike in the body. Long story short, this leads to the creation and retention of BODY FAT. So yeah, quit * doing that.

Am female actually. I don't know if I want to train for anything really, I just want to not be huge, want to be able to walk/work outside without sweating buckets.

I am 25 and I don't know if it's too late to consider it, but if I get fit within a couple of years I want to look into going to a police academy or something. But I'm trying not to be unrealistic, I do know we're talking a significant amout of time here.

I creak and crack like an old person and I am exhausted every day from a sit-down office job. I think the goal is to just feel less pathetic.

It is most absolutely not too late to consider it, but start now, and stop putting it off.
