hey /fit/, I drink grapefruit juice all the time, and I know it messes with antibiotics. Does it do anything else with medicines?
>> Anonymous
Well, I know that it somehow interferes with cholesterol medications.

truth. grapefruit juice denatures the active site on liver enzymes which metabolize hyperlipidemia medications among others

aka competitive inhibition
>> Anonymous
it fucks with anything that's metabolised by cyp3a4, increasing activity (no, thats not always a good thing)

wtf

excuse me. not denaturing and competing, mah bads. again in hyperlipidemia meds this inhibition leads to irregularly high blood plasma levels of the drug

for the record: noncompetitive is the denaturing of the active site via inhibitor binding to allosteric site. its been a while since school sry anon.

please ignore midnight express. (s)he obviously has no idea wtf (s)he is saying

all you need to know is that it blocks an enzyme (cyp3a4), so anything which would otherwise be broken down by that enzyme will be broken down slower. you can usually find out if this enzyme is used fairly easily.
