Are kipping pull ups a good way of training to do proper pull ups?
>> Anonymous
I started doing pullups by finding a wall where I could pull myself up on the bar put put my feet (tippy-toes) against the wall as I lifted myself

So feet off the ground - but toes resting against the wall to take off some of the weight of your body

Do those as much as possible as well as trying pullups without the helping hand

It's acceptable until you can do proper pull ups. On a related note, does anyone know what difference having a narrower or wider grip for pull ups and chin ups does? Like how having your arms farther apart during a push up uses your pecs more, and having your hands closer together targets your triceps more.

The wider the arms, the more lats.
The narrower, the more biceps.

Bull-fucking-shit. Since when did training with poor posture and discipline become ""acceptable"? If you practice and train with shitty form, you will execute the real thing with shitty form. Idiots.

If you can't do a real pull-up than kip your ass off.

Have never done kipping pull-ups.

Try doing 50-100 in a single workout, and then tell me they don't work your lats and biceps hard. CrossFit is known for doing massive numbers of them, with very little weighted pull-up work, but they can still pull some good numbers. Check out the results from a 7x1 1RM test back in July:

A fair number of newbies pulling light, but a lot of good ones too, for example:

38M/180 (gained a few pounds - wish I could say it was all muscle)

CFWU (3)

WOD - Weighted P/Us:
1- +50lbs
2- +60lbs
3- +70lbs
4- +75lbs (tie PR)
5- +80lbs (new PR)
6- +82.5lbs (PR again)
7- +85lbs (fail - could only get eyes above bar)
bw 170

30 + 18 lb weight vest
40 + 18 lb weight vest
50 + 18 lb weight vest
60 + 18 lb weight vest
70 + 18 lb weight vest
75 + 18 lb weight vest (fail)
75 + 18 lb weight vest (fail)
42yom / 148

50
75
85
95
105
115
125(PR)

Tried 135 but only got it to about nose level and couldn't go any further. Maybe next time.
28/f/109

15-25-30-35-40-45-50 (nose to bar could not get chin over, 50 would have been a PR! dammit!)
Also, Gym Jones does kipping pull-ups, and people seem to adore that place.

kipping is not poor posture and discipline you retard

no it is not "acceptable until you can do proper pull ups". its a different exercise. but then again im just being a dick and over analyzing what you said.

narrow grip hits outer lats on pullups
wide grip hits mid-back more

i can't remember the difference for chin-ups

kipping pullups are different not any worse or better, its a more useful movement for real life but doesnt't pose the same challenge as a "ordinary" pullup

You could just use resistance bands to help you do pull ups.

Kipping pull ups look prettying tireing
