what sort of preparation should i do before lifting? i had a talk with a personal trainer at my gym and she told me not to bother with any sort of cardio.. we didnt do stretches, the only warm up was 5 minutes on the ergo//rowing machine.

i train at home with free wights/bench/home gym. should i just stretch out the muscles i use? or not bother at all and get right into it?

Watch "Pumping Iron" before each and every workout

Warm up with some cardio and do some dynamic stretches.

There is scientific evidence to suggest that warming up is bullshit for preventing injuries.

My own experiences suggest this is true. However, it is one motherfucking hell of a lot easier to do exercises. I sit down to do my 3 sets of 12 on the 45 degree leg press. At 200, from a cold start, I struggle. After my 30-45 minutes jog and interval training, or even some lunges and calf lifts, I find it easier by orders of magnitude to do 230 and 240.

That scientific research probably just accounts for one aspect of it, while that little negative aspect is probably outweighed by benefits not researched yet.

I myself do lifts much better biking to the gym rather than driving there.

Warming up concerning weight lifting:
Your cartileges need to be "lubed" before you hit the weights or else you'll grind the shit down.
By doing some cardio before, they soak up with fluid and enlarge, giving better protection.

You probably had streching in mind.
Warming up is always necessary, while static stretching is not.

I usually just warm up by doing like ~4 lighter sets (increasing each time of course) before I do my actual work sets (5x5).

No, I don't. I mean after I do some other exercises that work for my legs, doing other leg exercises is easier by orders of magnitude, but I've never been injured one way or the other.

I warm up by doing lighter sets, before doing the move proper.
