Get an exercise bike instead - I don't do fitness for health benefits, I'm just vain, but I used to be a right fatty. But last summer break? Bought a $100 second hand bike on eBay, plus I dieted, and overall I lost FIVE STONE. I'm doing it again this year to try to lose the last little bit, I've got about a stone left to lose before I'm ridiculously thin.
My advice for you is to make that hour more vigarous - if you can't afford a bike or an exercise bike or a treadmill, go running. Get an MP3 or walkman or something and get some good motivating music on and the time will fly. Also, REALLY try to watch what you're eating - first look at the saturated fat value of things, then the sugar/calories, then the carbs (especially of which sugar). If you're really serious about being fit then try to pick a lot of low fat and diet things, but make sure the diet food you eat IS ACTUALLY LOW, a lot of them claim to be and actually aren't. Go look up catabolic foods - foods that actually lead to you LOSING weight, like celery and raspberries - and snack on those when you're hungry. Salted popcorn is good. Try and keep snacks between meals to a minimum. Occasionally allow yourself something like DELICIOUS CAKE or a burger or whatever, because otherwise your will power will snap under the pressure of never eating anything fatty and delicious, ever - but keep it to a minimum, and seriously, cut out mcdonalds/KFC/Burger king.
Remember: nothing tastes as good as thin looks.
