Lose weight and not get fit? How is that mutually exclusive? The goal should be fat loss, not weight loss. It's easy to lose weight, just go into a sauna for an hour. It's also easier to lose muscle mass than it is to lose fat. Resulting in what is called "skinny fat", where your weight is low/average, you look alright with clothes on, but the fat is still hanging on you underneath.

Exactly. Also why you don't gain muscle from walking or running. Or from hammering. Improved muscle endurance? Probably, but no real increase in size or strength.
