I weigh like 175 pounds and I'm like 6"2', so I'm a bit of a fat ass at the moment.

So I'm thinking I'd do a bit of exercise for 30 minutes a day while dieting, but I'm not sure how few calories I can consume each day and be considered in a somewhat safe state.

Anyone have any idea?

with exercise, your height and weight: about 2000 to lose roughly a lb and a half a week.

Are you sure that it wouldn't be possible to lose more then 1.5 pounds a week? It just sounds kinda lowish.

I have back problems which wouldn't really allow me to do heavy lifting.

most definitely, you can lose 5lbs a week easily if you've got a shitload of willpower and don't mind spending the next month or so in a complete daze. You starve yourself (ie: 1200 calories a day with an hour's cardio) and I guarantee you'll lose weight at an astounding rate, despite what you may have heard. Problem is, you'll probably get tired of it after a few days and be back to your normal habits within a week. If you're really committed, you can increase exercise and decrease caloric intake drastically (burning the candle at both ends) and you will see the results physically every couple of days. It is hard as fuck though and you would need a lot of motivation to keep at it. My motivation was having a 50/50 chance of being on the "skins" team at basketball practice each week. And every fucking week, even as I was losing weight drastically, I would pray that I wouldn't be skins, turns out I ended up skins the next 4 weeks in a row and I had lost about 18lbs by the end of it. Never put it back on either.

1.5lbs of fat is over five thousand calories.
OVER FIVE THOUSAND.

Come back to 4chan. Dropping your calorific intake that far below your maintainance rate is entirely un-fucking-sustainable, willpower or not.

I would think dieting could achieve that.
