Sup /fit/

So for about a month ive been doing martial arts. Im learning Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, and Judo. The classes are pretty intense, and last about 1.5 hours. I got every weekday.

Im not overweight or anything, but i do have a layer of fat maybe half an inch thick or so over my muscles. Id like to be more toned.

Im already seeing some results, I feel like i have more energy, but also a greater demand for sleep and food. (prior to these classes i got no exercise) Im also getting way more flexible.

Will these classes get me any strength, or is it mostly a cardio workout that will burn fat? How will my body change if i continue like this? How can i suppliment and enhance the positiv effects of my workouts? Should i lift before/ after class, eat differently, etc. Thanks fit.

cardio is the only thing that will burn fat, along with a calorie deficet. I don't really know how long it will take you to burn your fat because I know those classes aren't really good cardio as compared to other martial arts.

If you do this class in the evening, lift in the morning, vice versa.

Eat multivitamins, find out your target calories, eat that much - etc.

No. If you want to gain strength and lose fat then only cardio and strength training will help.

If you're looking to get in shape then martial arts will not help you. However if you want to learn how to defend yourself then drop Tae Kwon Do and take up Muay Thai.

Are there internet resources you're looking at that are showing you the different purpose of the different martial arts as a whole?

I mean I know a major part of a lot of them are self defense, I'm just wondering if theres a chart comparing in varying degrees of selfdefense/offense/power/holds and such.

My Krav Maga trumps your pussy Muay Thai, at least when it comes to self defense. It may be hard to find a gym where they offer it. I had some kind of training video a while back. Lemme find it

If you're an out of shape fatass and the martial art class is comprehensive (i.e. they also make you do cardio and lifting so your technique gets better), then it's fine as a workout.

There's not much use teaching a huge fat guy how to deliver an axe kick, if he's going to lose weight - he'll have to relearn it with his new body shape.
