Gym Alternative Anonymous
I just moved to New York, NY and I'm looking for good alternatives to a gym. I don't have the money to piss away on a gym that's $100-$120 a month (which most gyms are in NYC) when I'm not sure how often I'll be able to get there.

My old gym in DC was only $30 a month so I feel like an asshole paying nearly 4x that much.

What are alternative ways to work out without joining a gym? I run everyday (3 - 8mi) and do sit ups and push ups, but obviously I need more in order to get into better shape.

pic is what i consider perfect body.

Buy your own bench. Find a neighbor that does and ask if you can come by and use his set.

Alternatively, climb up and down the facade of your building instead of using doors and stairs.

pull up bar, jogging, pushups with elevated feet, and other bodyweight exercises. I'm considering investing in a sledgehammer once I get a little extra scratch in order to make working my back easier.

I pay 30 here you Cali. You're telling me you cant find a gym for under $100.
Sounds like you're making excuses.

I believe it, NYC is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. It's worse there than LA or Chicago.

I live in an apartment and own these:

- simple flat bench ($30)
- pull-up bar, mounted in door jam ($15)
- kettle bells (price varies by weight)
- 25, 30, 35, 45lb dumbbells (same)

That doesn't sound like much do you can hit all major muscle groups with varying exercises with that equipment. I might also get a vertical bench when one of my roommates moves out and his room becomes available.

I don't know that you can become that dude in the pic without a bona fide gym, but you can at least be well on your way.

Some gyms aren't even month to month. They have year contracts so you'd have to give them it all at once if not 2 or 3 hefty installments. Sure, it comes out to be about 100 dollars month, but you should be ready to have all of the money upfront which really sucks.

I'm glad that I'm in grad school and I'm taking advantage of a free gym.

Where in NY are you at? I live in NY too, and my gym costs around 30-50 / month depending on the plan and options you get

most NYSC's are around 60 / month...

i used to have a membership through a promotion @ a local NYSC and it only ran me 600 for a year

Newspaper classifieds/craigslist

You can find your own basic weight set and bench and such for 100-160 dollars.

Yeah, NYSC is $60/yr; I just joined the one on 145h and it's ok. They need more SQUAT RACKS though. I used to go to a neighborhood indie gym for $30/month and it was better than the NYSC for lifting but it's long gone.

But the best deal in the city, if you're cheap/broke, is joining a city-owned Recreation Center. It's $50 for the YEAR. They have weight rooms which are useable, though you'll have to wait for gear sometimes. I'd done that for 5 years or so since I first moved here when I couldn't afford anything else and I was really glad to have it.

Reynolds looks skinny with clothes on. Unless you're the type of faggot who walks around with his shirt off all day your physique will go unnoticed.

It's better than being an attention whoring overcompensating faggot with no functional muscle. Speaking of which, Ryan could use some cutting there.

I pay the equivalent of 13 dollars per month for my gym subscription.

That is all.

I disagree that you disagree, go look at some skinny men you homo

Yes because Ryan Reynolds trained for strength and functionality without care for aesthetics amirite. You're a homo.

If you read about the guys who train stars basically they don't add too much mass; just lean them out as much as possible to make it LOOK like they're super-muscular.

I don't have the space for a bench in my apt. Unfortunately living in nyc when you're young means your apt is small as all hell.

I'm living in the Murray Hill area. I'd be willing to travel anywhere to find the cheapest gym

Another problem is that I'm not sure how long I'm gonna be here, so I can't really throw down $500 for a sign up fee only to leave in a couple of months for grad school and be out all that money. I also don't need that much cardio at a gym, strictly weights. I'll have to look around at some of the Rec centers.

public parks & rec gyms. $50 / year for membership to all of them. the Lost Battalion Hall in Queens has an Oly lifting program for $50/year extra, go join it & get all strong and shit.
