Are pushups enough to sculpt your abs and pecs and torso in general, or will that just tone them? Should I also be doing crunches or pec flys or anything? I have no problem doing pushups exclusively.

And should I also eat less fatty foods? I'm an ectomorph, so I burn through them easily, but my gut is a bit flabby.

On push-ups: If you want to gain muscle, you should work in the 8-12 rep range. Tone/sculpt, wtf are you talking about. If your bodyfat is low, you'll look "toned". Crunches build muscle and tend to thicken your trunk. I am a fan of planks (make the muscle stronger without necessarily getting bigger).

Here's the deal. You eat more and lift heavy, you'll gain muscle. You eat less and lift heavy, you'll lose fat. That's extremely simplified, however.

If you want to go by conventional wisdom, you'd eat a moderately high-carb diet.

I, however, espouse a high-fat, low-carb, and moderate protein approach.

forget the body type bullshit, it doesn't matter as much as you think.

as for building pec muscle you need to be doing bench if you're new to lifting.

try leg raises for building up the hip flexers and weighted crunches for building up ab strength.

I have no problem doing 30 reps at a time, 40 if I push it. Do you mean I should do 8-12 really slow reps? Or with weight on my back?

What I mean is, yes, weighted. You should have enough weight on you/be using enough weight to only make it into the 8-12 rep range.

If you can already pump out 40, you need more resistance bro.
