As long as you have a good idea on what you're gonna do on a machine, it should be fine.
Also having a schedule and stuff makes things easier.
My schedule is something like this: Lift weights and stuff one day. Then the next day I run, sprint, jog, bicycle, etc.
Since you're probably going to a gym soon, for cardio, run on the elliptical, your feet will basically be gliding around so it shouldn't impact your knees.
