I've been doing dumbell exercises for the past 2 days, with 2 days of rest. I just realized the dumbells weight only 6.5 pounds each. Is this weight pointless then, should i aim for a heavier weight, I currently do 3x12 for each exercise
>> Anonymous
It should be heavy enough that you power out after 5 reps. 12 isnt much use, increase the weight.

6.5lb is nothing, unless you are some lazy woman halfassing it.

but i really don't wanna get big and veiny, its gross. i'd rather have tone than bulk.

I've read that you should power out after 12 reps, never heard of people doing 5 with dumbbells. Also I forgot to mention I am increadibly weak, as in can't even do a single press up.
>> Anonymous
It's ok to start with the 12 rep thing.
If you wanna get serious later on, nothing beats a 5x5 routine though.

All I'd like is to build a bit of muscle, and become stronger, I have a routine that works most of the body with the dumbbells, I think I could do a heavier weight, I was just wondering if I'll notice a difference when using 6.5lbs

You wont turn into big ass muscle man from lifting weights alone, you need to be eating right to gain muscle. A pair of freeweights just got delivered to my door as i was writing this, weird :S

is the 6,5 pounds a challenging weight?
if it is it's not pointless
if it isn't it is pointless
>> Anonymous
well to begin with its not challenging, but after doing a few exercises I can feel the burn, would say, increasing the reps from 12-25 be any better.
>> Anonymous
>>165807
it is too light
>> Anonymous
But if its a challenge to get to 12 reps, will it not be even harder to do 3 sets of 12 reps. Plus I do alot of exercises that work the arms, would that not mean I could only do a few.

Is there any difference between cast iron, chrome or vinyl weights? I just bought 2x 10kg cast iron freeweights, not that bothered but was wondering if there is any difference apart from the look of them.

Pic related, its the ones i bought (York).

vinyl or rubber coated bells won't make such big dents in your floor if you drop em.

Yes and fucking yes. That's the point. Oh God I got trolled. FUCK.

Oh for fucks sake they're the ones I have. Do the nuts keep slipping off on yours too?
>> Anonymous

Not yet. Got them off Amazon for £24.99, they seem fine so far, just need to get my hands used to the grip on it and toughen them up.

>>165835

Thanks. Best be careful then.

lrn2tighten. Use your bodyweight to rotate the dumbbells while they're on the floor, then hammer them in so its impossible to come undone. Mines at 17.5kg so the spinlock actually sticks out cos I added more weights than its supposed to hold, so mine has to be tight otherwise they would fall off during use.

>>166039
You got ripped off. Buying weights online is stupid, they're bound to have a higher price for the weighted delivery cost. In argos, a complete set only costs around £15, with even more additional weights.
>> Anonymous
I suggest buying pliers for tightening the bolts.

OP here, these are the ones I do have, although they were bought for alot cheaper ages ago

Would these be better suited, bearing in mind I am a beginner, and can buy heavier plates later on

Only faggots use chrome or vinyl dumbbells. Get York cast iron like a real man. Plus additional weights are a lot cheaper. I'll be getting 40kg, 8x5kg tomorrow for £40.

Also, a tip, unless you have a car, you should bring a bring to help you carry it around. Although it might now weight much, carrying it for prolonged durations really hurt your hands, especially with the shitty plastic strap it comes in.

>>166300
Who the fuck needs 8x5k lol
>> Anonymous
>>166318
17.5kg is the max I can fit on one dumbbell, any more than that the spinlock wouldn't actually fit on. I've bought 3 sets of those york dumbbells so I could gradually add as I get stronger, but now I need bigger plates. So two dumbbells with 4x5kg plates on each.
