Whats /fit/'s opinion on shadowboxing as a workout?

I don't have a gym membership and can't afford one. I cant really do jumping jacks or jump rope because I live in an apartment. I can't afford a treadmill and can't run outside because its starting to get really cold outside. I don't want to build muscle, just lose fat.

Unless you're really out of shape, it's not really a work out, it's better for keeping your heart rate up between sets of something else.

If you want to get a bag, then you'll be in business. Shadow boxing and hitting a bag seem like the same thing conceptually, but it's like the difference between walking and sprinting.
You can't put any real mustard on your punches when you're shadow boxing, because you'll strain your shoulders and possibly hyper-extend your elbow.

if u think its a workout then ur a fatass
its a warmup/cooldown fatass

Shadowboxing is not a workout. It's what we boxers do when leading up to a fight, it keeps us in rhythm and sharp, and contrary to popular belief we don't touch the bags leading up to fights. Bags are for conditioning, and are probably what you're looking for in the form of a boxer 'workout'...

shadow kick boxing would be a better work out

well you gotta make sure not to hyper extend when you punch

i reckon you should just get a bag

Joint problems + It doesn't work.

You inevitably have to slow down your punch before reaching your maximum length. What would be a better workout is getting a small medicine ball and using an explosive punching motion, push the ball out of your hand (onto a bag) and catching it on the rebound, repeating the process. This way you're able to realize the full potential of a weighted punch without hindering yourself with the problems dumbbells bring.

You're joking right? Shadow boxing is used by boxers as a warm up and cool down after bag work. It is also for practicing techniques. It aint used just for an upcomming fight.

So either Learn2box faggot or get a better trainer!

*Sigh*, that was implied, as it's blatantly obvious. But it isn't used as a workout either way. Also, have some actual league matches before you come here talking about doing bag work for an upcoming fight, your ignorance is not welcome here.
Bag work is used for conditioning, not to get ready for a fight, it throws out your rhythm.

i ran a trail today in the rain. had to jump over huge ass puddles, at the end there was this huge puddle and i misjudged how fatigued my legs were and landing face first in a pile of mud and water. got up and fucking raced to the end. wanted to do another lap but i figured my calves were finished

yeah! i hear ya brah! one time i was running throught park on my regular root, there is this ditch, which you can avoid if you og like 5 meters to left, but i alway jump over it, and that time the ice formed on other side and on top of it it was covered on snow, so i didnt see it, so i jump, land there and trip, but since i control my body pretty well it turns in some sort of flip and i lend on my foot, knees and arms, so i catch my breath for like a second, then roar and dash from that position. i bet people that witnessed that had some wtf looks on they faces...but i didnt cared at that time, i was hight on Endorphin baby!
