hey /fit/

i'm going to start going to the gym 5 days a week, or maybe just 4, before work

my goal, more than looking good, is to become very fit. In other words, I want to be able to do a lot of pull-ups, push-ups, rope-climb, etc.

I'm busy so I can't concentrate on a complex and varied routine...are the following exercises enough for upper-body?

military press from in front of neck

military press from behind neck

lateral pull-down (to front of body) (I can only do one overhand pull-up now even though I am thin, unfortunately, so I think i'll ditch this once I can do more)

bench press

Stronglifts 5x5 is about the best workout, it explains everything on their site.

thanks a lot but is that for those who mean to lose a lot of weight?

I am actually thin...I'm pretty athletic and able to run long distances, but unfortunately weaker than I want to be. However, when I say I want to be strong I don't mean being able to bench press 300 pounds but instead being able to do a lot of pull-ups, push-ups, and other endurance exercises of that sort.

because i can only manage one overhand pull-up at the moment. it's very embarrassing :(

isn't the pull-down pretty much similar to the pull-up in terms of the muscles used? I know it's not exactly the same but isn't it the weight exercise one would do if one can't do pull-ups yet?

You need to start doing a lot of hard fuckin'. Good luck with that.

so practicing lateral pull-downs will not enable you to do more pull-ups at all? that seems a bit incredulous to me?

lat pulls won't make you better at pullups son, pullups is about improving neuromuscular function which is different from sitting on a bench and pulling an object up and down, eventho they look the same
