Hey /fit/, I want to start doing squats but I have no idea how much I'd be capable of doing.

I'm a female and roughly 105lbs with decent leg strength. Rough estimates?

Another question would be how does the weight you lift on machines transfer over to barbells? Would you actually be able to lift less when you use barbells or roughly the same? I'm tired of using weight machines.

why would you want to do squats?

Why not? Girls that do squats are hot.

You should start by doing squats without weights and getting perfect from down. A good way to start is by doing squats with a large exercise ball between your back and a wall. as you squat the ball will roll up and down and your back will remain straight. keep your weight on the back of your feet and not on your toes.

Also, you'll be able to lift less than you did with machines. Alot less dependng on the machine you used.

I guess I could start with the bar+some weight. No one does squats at the gym I go to anyways, so I don't see a problem with me hogging it for a bit.

Any idea about the machine --> barbell theory though?

You'll be lifting less on a barbell than on a machine. You've got to move the weight in a much more natural and really quite different motion. You've got to build new stabaliser muscles to balance and keep the weight solid along that new path of motion. So, you'll likely have to start with significantly reduced weights to perfect your form.

I really couldn't give you a good estimate of weight... but I'd say:

Start with a free bar (45lbs) for 2 sets of 5 reps to warm up
...
Add another 5-10lbs for 3 reps
...
Add another 5-10lbs for 3 reps
...
Repeat until you reach a point whereupon you really struggle/fail to lift for 3 reps and take a little back off. That is likely your max weight-ish. Do that weight for 3 sets of 5 with perfect form and try and increase by 5-10lbs every workout.

Also, mad props for actually deciding to do freeweight squats... you'll see mega-benefits. Try and keep at them too, assuming you're new to barbell squats, you'll need to work on your form very dilligently for the first few workouts... avoiding really pushing yourself until you're certain you're perfect. It takes a while and can be frustrating so stick with it.

make sure that while doing squats you have your shirt off and a camera shooting at least 4 frames a second of your workout. also pants off. this works best if you have a hangy inner labia.
