My sister got me a week trial at Gold's Gym. She says she can add me on for like 10 dollars a month (200 dollar start up fee though). I'm going with her in about an hour. I've never really been to a gym. I've worked out at home for the past 4 months and last summer I used my school's weight room for football.

Browsing /fit/ for the past 2 months though made me want to try out the heralded Stronglifts 5x5 program. That's why I want to join a gym. What should I do my first day? I know a little about the Stronglifts routine...should I start off with that? Or should I just wander around the gym and try out the equipment they have? Are they going to give me a "tour guide" or something?

Pic unrelated.

Stronglifts isn't that great, but it's probably fine if you're just starting out.

Everyone preaches it on /fit/. What do you think instead? I used to just do circuits around the high school weight room...and at home I made up my own routines with free weights and tried to incorporate every muscle.

Your first day, you should just start out with an empty barbell and get comfortable with the form. Don't be timid. People don't care how much weight you have on your bar.

For a beginner, I don't think there is much better program, although I would recommend Starting Strength's 5x5 first because it includes Power Cleans as opposed to inverted rows (wth was Medhi thinking) and does not have the other accessory items that only seemed to have been added because people don't like a routine unless it includes biceps and abs

I've got a little experience...I do squats and deadlifts (granted, with free weights) but I know a little bit of how to do them. I wouldn't say I have perfect form, but I don't think I need to start out with the barbell. I read that on the Stronglift site, so I know that's where you got it from.

I still want to try out 5x5 just to get a change from my old routine. What are the exercises again...?

Deadlifts
Squats
Pull up (till failure)
Bench Press
Overhead press

I don't think that was the exact routine...cause I think there was a split, but I don't really care to do the push-ups (can do them at home if I wanted) or the crunches (also can be done at home, I do Ab-Ripper X anyway) and I haven't seen the bridges done yet. ( I assume it is like the neck bridge?)

I'm a month into Stronglifts and it suits me just fine. I started with the base weights andhave just been following the spreadsheet, with the exception of keeping Barbell Rows instead of Inverted Rows.

It's a good way to get into weight training, methinks.

Stronglifts has been great for me after i got tired of the bulking and cutting programs. Its just a basic strength training program that just works really. Its good on time and gets you into good shape. Starting strength 5x3 is also great and has power cleans instead of barbell rows but you can always add cleans to your stronglifts program. I would suggest reading starting strength and go on their program instead however since you will need to read up on technique ALOT especially for the exercises you are going to do. Deadlifts are simple enough to learn as well as the overhead press. Cleans and squats will need strict technique and a lot of practice for good results.
