the guy is right

been there before, and even if it doesn't make sense at all, it works.

you wont feel better right away, but as you go out and meet more people you'll feel better.

make an effort, a huge one.

if you let it be like that you'll never come out of it, actually you'll only get worse.

i found that having a GF have helped me ALOT as she supports me and got me out of it.

and believe me, i lost almost all of my "friends" during the depression.
you don't want that.

do something about it before it gets way worse.

Jogging, lifting, swimming. Exercise in general helps with it.

The idea is that if you listen to music that will surely make you sad ( emo ) or pissed about nothing ( slayer, cannibal corpse ) you will end up depressed. However, rap, techno/trance, classic rock, etc work fine for making you feel good.

People don't nearly understand how much emotions are a choice. I don't want to get into the theories but look up Existentialism, maybe download the TTC Lectures on it. That will definitely cheer you up and if it doesn't you are a faggot and missed the whole point of existentialism.

I am really sick of people bawwwwwing around.

There are options:
- take any sort of drugs to lift the mood (medicine also counts as a mood lifting drug)

-go looking fo help (professional, friends, relatives whatever)

-try to figure the problems for the cause on your own and try to fix them yourself

These options you can ofcourse mix them togehter and voila.

Then there is also the last option: becoming an hero, if you don't want any options i mentioned above.

Everything is fine, just do something!

I get depressed. It manifests itself in an inability to do ANYTHING productive. However, there exists a cure. Just take two full doses of Andrew WK every day:

"When we look into the future, to the place we haven't gone
See what we haven't done, we have known it all along
If we wait until tomorrow, will tomorrow ever come?
This is where we're coming from, and we're not the only ones

When we find ourselves in trouble we can find ourselves a way
You can find a place to stay and the place is always safe

If you have a heart that's in pain don't be afraid
You're not to blame
There's a better world inside of us
Where we always thought it was
You don't need to hide
You can open up your eyes
And you'll discover
That there is another world"

So yeah, it's hard sometimes, but just keep positive, keep stepping forwards and keep listening to positive music like AWK. It works wonders.

I agree. Try listen to upbeat music. Exercise does help as well: If you can get a friend to join in, its even better. Try make an effort to hang out with friends as much as you can. I found that even just going out for lunch with a buddy can really pick up your spirits. If all else fails, pot is your friend. :)

if the weather is tolerable, just put your headphones, pick some cash and start walking. get to the opposite end of your city, find a public library or park, sit there and enjoy the fresh air.

just wait and someone will start casual chat with you. then reciprocate, even if it's some bored fortysomething mom.

yeah. it's nice just to get the fuck out. Whether you meet people or not.

I don't meet many people. I don't do much.
But I got a temporary/summer job last week and involves a really long bus journey. I made 2 good friends in a couple of people who I met on the bus - they go to the same business complex as me.

Meeting people really is just about getting out there. Or attend your local Depression group/meet.

regular depression occurs, i think when you havent done anything in a long time, or interacted with anyone..

i think jobless people would get it more often, save for those workers who work alone or whatnot..

for me id just go on an internet game or chat, and mess with people for laughs.. works all the time
>> Anonymous
I do shit, I do anything.
Go see movies, go eat out by myself, anything, just seeing and being near people and watching them is enough to give me confidence to make friends, which is what I find will pull me through.
>> Anonymous
You people who say exercise helps or listen to upbeat music or go hang out with friends are really, really, really ignorant. I don't know if you think you suffer from depression, but if that sort of thing helps you get out of a rut, you are not suffering too badly. Those of us who suffer with serious, clinical depression, do not find listening to upbeat music helpful, cannot stomach exercise and don't want to be near other people. The only thing that helps is therapy and medication.

BAWWW I DON'T HAVE THE WILL TO LIVE.

There gets a point where you just have to pick yourself up from your mess and carry on with life. Willpower should be enough to over-come depression, but I've never been too down in my life to know. OP just said depression though, so I assumed he meant a short-term thing, not a deep rooted psychological problem. Wouldn't really ask on /fit/ if that were the case though...

I've suffered with depression for a long time (I never got it diagnosed, but I think when you're so tired and fed up of life that you can't physically bring yourself to get out of bed for four straight days that's a pretty severe case), but one day I was all, "SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAAA" and just got the fuck over it.

Did you not just reply to a post arguing the difference between depression and "depression?"
And then you openly admit that you suffered "depression," not depression... and yes, there IS a difference.
What you described sounded like a slump, or being a lazy ass. You have noooo idea what it's like to be diagnosed with chronic depression. You can't just SPARTAAAAA yourself to health. Trust me.

to OP- go talk to a professional. If you're close to your family, talk to them and sk them to help you find professional help. i obviously assume you're not taking most 4chan responses seriously, but anyone who said to "sparta" out of it or anything like that has no idea what they're talking about, Clinical depression isn't just being sad for a while, it's best treated with clinical help.

dealing with depression:

1. workout, improve self esteem
2. listen to music that makes you not feel sad and like everything is shit or pointless (anything from dolly parton to dillinger escape plan really)
3. make to-do lists for each day that aren't intense and full of highly important shit, spread it out over the week, but be smart about it and dont leave things till the last minute
4. talk to people - friends, strangers or family members - it doesnt really matter unless they're the kind of people that send you into a homicidal rage
5. do something creative with your free time.
6. sleep well and eat well
7. avoid prescriptions for depression drugs, they get you hooked and are hard/dangerous to quit

most of the "cures" posted by people here are very good, but only for people, who ARE simply bored with life, and that was causes their depression, which isn't a depression, but just being BORED
just like>>135847said

but serious depression is mainly caused by something rather SERIOUS. until you deal with the cause of this, you won't heal your depression
every depression is unique, yet they are very similar to each other

i know it's hard, but you should move on. an hero is an option, but there is always time for that

>just put your headphones
wtf? No, don't do that. Nothing says "don't fucking bother me I'm listening to emo" like a pair of headphones. I think there was a study that linked people who always carried music with them and a smaller number of friends.

Anyway, here's some steps that helped me:
1 - take it slow, don't overwhelm yourself.
2 - lower your standards a little. some people make their depression worse by expecting way too much from life.
3 - turn off your tv, your computer, your radio, and any other form of distraction, and bargain with yourself when you start getting mind-numbingly bored that you'll go outside and do something.

Just letting you guys know, from what I've gathered, most of the suggestions in this thread are how to avoid being severely depressed and are not for people who are too deep in. If you made the choice to mope and not do anything when you could've saved yourself then go get some medicine and do weekly therapy.
>> Anonymous
I did take antidepressants, however they were not a right fit for me. Honestly, it just took time. I got out of the bad situation I was in, used coping mechanisms that kept people out of my life and just worked on myself for awhile. Also, it helped going away to college and I could be the real me. I started exercising, wearing make up and just taking care of myself. But it was a long road to getting where I am today. Dont get me wrong, there are days where I'm still depressed and my self esteem is still low, but its vastly improved from my lowest points.
