I want to lose (a lot of) weight so I'm going to the gym for the first time ever tomorrow. But I have no idea what to start with. Any ideas?

find a trainer that knows this trade and get him to make you a training plan and show you the proper techniques.

DO NOT RUN!

You are too big. You will fuck up your knees and really cause yourself problems. Either walk, use an elliptical, or a stairstepper. Go slow.

And if your gym has a trainer that will help you (usually for a fee) get that help. They can personalize it for your goals.

I'm not the guy in the pic.

if you're anywhere close to that fatty in the picture don't go to the gym yet...

Just spend 1 / 2 months walking like 2 hours a day and eating less, then you can actually use the machines etc

I'm not nearly as large as the guy in the pic, but I'm still pretty fat (275ish)

You're still too big to run. The best advice is to meet with a trainer.

Second best, do elliptical for 35 minutes M-W-F for two weeks, and come back to /fit/ and report your results. We'll go from there.

what about doing it every day

rest is just as important as training. If you do it everyday, you'll overtrain and only get sore.

Start of light. You don't want to work yourself too heavily starting off. Your heart won't like it and you'll find your muscles ache for days (and feel weakened).

Do light excersise, move between machines, if there are trainers around, see if you can get them to recommend a schedule or areas to focus on.

You know elliptical is only to warm up right..?

If you feel like you need to do something on the other days, go for a walk. If you're going to the gym for the FIRST TIME, you need to go slow. You will do more harm than good if you try to become superman in a week, trust me.

Now, get focused on a diet that you can live with. Tons of advice around here on that subject. Go get a multivitamin, some fish oil, and stock up on healthy fresh, natural foods. Stick to this rule, don't eat anything that won't go bad.

Keep asking, we'll keep answering.

if you are this fat, cycle or walk untill your body adapts to the strain you're putting yourself under.

GO EVERYDAY.
and once you get into the swing of things, begin using weights (only as a secondary exercise) to start looking more shapley/toned..

elliptical is cardio, which is enough if you are overweight.
Don't want to ruin your joints.

Dude, the OP has never been in a gym before.

For people who have been around a while, a 35 minute elliptical workout is a nice warmup, but for the op (who has more than likely been sedentary a long time) it's a workout.

I stick by the advice. Go 3 times a week for 2 weeks and report back on how it went.

Alright. I take it back. You're right. I'm thinking in terms of a dude who's at least in the beginning stages of working out. If OP has never been there before and is, in fact, as sedentary as a log.. yea.. elliptical cardio might be the way to go, lol.
