How to get started with pushups? Anonymous
ITT: Workout advice

Bit of backstory about me: lower-end fatty (BMI: 24,9, most of that excess weight is fat, not muscle) deciding to get off his ass. Has just started taking it serious a few days ago.

Cardio aside right now, I plan to do some basic strength training in the morning consisting of pushups and crunches. Keep in mind that I'm very, very untrained.

When doing pushups, I can do possibly 5 or 6 in a row, afterwards there's just no strength in my arms anymore and I can't lift myself. After a pause of 30 seconds to a minute, I can do 3 or 4 more pushups before the same happens. I do this (called a set?) four times.

The first time I did that I didn't stretch before, and was sore for three days in which I couldn't do anything at all. That was last week. The next time, I did some stretching. The day after that, curiously, I was not sore at all (I expected some reward soreness I guess).

Am I doing something wrong? Please spare some advice for a workout n00b.

do more of them then if you want sore or put some weight on your back tho i dont think your at that level already.

also you can start doing dips thats a great workout with your body also and will benefit your pushups

soreness doesn't really mean anything. your body won't keep getting sore for very long, and it will NEVER be as bad as it is the first time unless you let yourself go for a long time without doing anything again. I kinda like being sore now, it means i've done something above and beyond.. and 'reward soreness' is the perfect way to describe it

Eat a banana!! I find that if I really push myself with my push ups I get pain for a few days, but when I have a banana at the end of my workout I feel fine.

Push ups are strange like that. You will start struggling to do any, then once you figgure out exactly how to do them you'll find that you can really push your limits for how many you can do at a time over a relatively short amount of workouts. Only 4 months ago I would ache and regret it if I did 20 pushups at once, now I can do 100+ over the course of a workout without any pain.

Once you can do a reasonable amount look into various types of push ups.
