Wear pants.

I've never actually hit my legs with the weight while deadlifting, so examine your form again.

Something about having to keep the weight in the center of the body throughout the movement which surprisingly enough, the legs are in the way until you can get the bar over the knee.

Wear sweatpants.

You're doing it RIGHT if you're scraping your shins with the bar. Learn to love it.

You honestly think you'll be worrying about your silly little shins in the middle of a five plate deadlift? The pain makes me pull harder.

Look for something called a "trap-bar"

just keep your stance narrow enough so it slides on the smooth part of the bar.

then you just get red marks

It shouldn't scrape your shin. Check your form, the bar should be mid foot from starting position. Don't pull using just your upper body and you won't hit your shins.

PUSSIES! Accept the scrapes into your life.

The skin on your shins will get stronger & it won't hurt anymore. Just keep with it and you'll be fine.

Rippetoe said the bar should brush your shins and everything. Once you get used to bringing the bar straight up with your ass and legs, you'll do it without brushing it against your knees.

Wear tights.

And now that I think of it, if you're really serious you can just buy deadlift socks.

as my form gets better i'm just holding the bar out a bare minimum distance from the legs. Like half a centimeter or something. it lightly touches sometimes but I have enough strength that I can control it. So I say just get better.

newb deadlifter though here.
