Headaches when working out Anonymous
I just started working out and eating more and healthy. Things is going great, I've gained 10 pounds of muscles in a very short period of time.

The last few workouts I've been getting massive headaches, is this normal? Keep in mind I've never worked out before. Anyone else have this problem?

You'll get headaches if you go to the gym on an empty stomach.. or if you just eat shitty shit. I guess also lifting too much weight.

REMEMBER KIDS, THE LESSER THE WEIGHT, THE MORE REPS YOU CAN DO. THE MORE REPS YOU CAN DO, THE STRONGER YOU GET.

Lets all lift 10 pound weights and do 500 reps

Don't hold your breath. You'll get a brain hemorrhage...or a bitchin' headache followed by a stroke.

So yeah, control your breathing and try to keep the pressure in your head to a minimum.

Being dehydrated can also give you headaches, try drinking water when you workout,
>> Anonymous
Are you drinking enough? Dehydration can cause headaches.

I worked out today on a somewhat empty stomach. It was horrible, my arms were really shaky.

OP here.

I never work out on an empty stomach. I was drinking a lot of water when I was working out and I think my breathing is fine. The headaches has just come the last few times, and often after just a few reps. (I'm not lifting too heavy).

I've heard someone say it's the body adjusting to the training somehow, since I never worked out before.

make sure you're breathing (don't hold your breath in during lifting / exercising, should moderate it - personally i find exhaling during the lift and inhaling during the return to be the best strategy)

don't concentrate so hard that you strain your head / neck muscles when you lift. Focusing on breathing will help this too.

DRINK WATER / GET SLEEP! dehydration and lack of sleep are two big causes for headaches in general.

Headaches are likely caused by high blood pressure. After you've gotten in better shape they should stop happening.

are you breathing? Seriously a lot of people just try and hold their breath every rep. Instead of holding your breath, try breathing quicker.

I guess so. Shit that doesn't make sense.. doesn't really make sense to me.

This is kinda weird. Check with a doctor of course.

Sometimes when the lactic acid is really built up in my system I'd get headaches working out - I'd pop 2-3 aspirin before my workout.

oops beat me too it.

Where are your headaches? Temples, behind the eyes, creeping up the back of your neck or smack in the center?

Oh, and how long do they last? The entire workout, just during the lift, hours or days after lifting?

Hey man,

Sounds like you have exactly the same thing I did for a while. Crippling head pain after only a few reps. After it happened the first time, it kept also happening when I fapped/boned mai waifu.

The doctor was fucking useless. I had to figure it out myself - it seemed to happen whenever my heart rate increased *fast*. I think the blood pressure in my skull was increasing faster than I could cope and bang, migraine time.

I eventually got over it. I did this by giving up weightlifting for about a month. Instead, every day I would hit the treadmill. I would start very slow at first, and very gradually increase speed. Eventually I'd reach a good speed (about 6mph) and I'd maintain it for 20 mins. If I felt ok, the next day I'd increase it to 6.1mph.

The idea was to increase my heart rate gradually so there wasn't a sharp rise in pressure.

After a month, I started warming up on the treadmill before hitting the weights. Now I don't even need to do that, my body just adapted.

But, you should see your doctor just to rule out anything serious. Repeat what I did, but for Christ's sake take it easy the first few times, and get better.

I've had the headaches of the back of my head, but now I have it in the forehead.

The headaches can last from 1 hour to a few hours.

do you sleep enough?
Calcium or magnesium deficiancy?

OP here.

Appreciate all the answers aswell. I guess I'll be hitting the treadmill nice and slow. I'll also go see a doctor in ~a week.

I could sleep more to be honest. About the calcium and magnesium, I'm not sure. But I drink about a liter of milk each day and take vitamins/minerals every day.

Yeah, I am pretty sure you have what I had. I pulled a muscle in my neck pretty bad, and I had thought it had healed. But one time, I was working out a little too hard and got my blood pressure too high. This cause the injured muscle to clamp around the nerve and squeeze. Sharp, almost unbearable. Even though it happened in the back of my head, it felt like eyes were bleeding. After that, I also had trouble orgasming because of it. Try fucking your wife and not being allowed to cum, it sucks.

It's definitely gone now, but it took a while (couple months). I just reduced my intensity and watched my blood pressure. Some ibruprofen and a massage won't hurt either.

It's called an "exertion headache" or "weighlifters headache" (google both). There's a good article on it here:

Wow, I really appreciate that answer man (not OP, by the way).

A few months ago, I began training again after a long lay off with plenty of weight gain, I immediately began super-setting moderate weight and suddenly collapsed too my knees with a headache I've never experienced before. Also, when I fapped later that night, it came again (pardon the pun). So I stopped fapping for a week and started walking, after about 10 days I could fap without the migraine, I haven't started lifting yet since, but I'll heed your advice on the gradual cardiovascular improvement. I came to the same conclusion through my own study, because my doctor was just as useless.

So, godspeed op and the rest of my fellow /fit/.
