I started weightlifting about four months ago. I gained 35lbs of muscle and everything was going well until my elbow started to hurt.
It would hurt right after an exercise that used it and continue to hurt for hours. When I stayed off of it, if felt fine. After three days of this I stopped lifting.
That was two weeks ago. I want to go back to lifting, but it still hurts too badly when I do anything heavy with my triceps. I think I may have strained my tendon, but I'm not sure.
How long do I need to stay off of it and is there anything I can do so I can go back to my routine?
Any advice is welcome.

You gained at max, 8 lbs of muscle. Enjoy your 27 lbs of fat and water.

Stay off as long as it hurts. Simple.
Pain is a signal that something is wrong, listen to your body.
Do exercises that do not involve that muscle.

keep working out jsut lighten up or stay away from the exercises that affect it.

do you do preacher curls?

I have been staying off of it while it hurts. I was thinking that ibuprofen or something may help.
I do preacher curls and those dont hurt. My chest and shoulders have been suffering a little because a lot of core exercises uses my triceps.

Aspirin, diclofenac, paracetamol, ibuprofen can ease the pain.
Diclofenac can also reduce the inflammation if there is one, highyl recommended.

Diclofenac is prescription only, or OTC if im not mistaken. My mum takes it for headaches, i used to mix it with codeine for getting mashed, worked pretty well.

Nah, you're mixing it up with something.
Diclofenac is a harmless analgetic especially for sports injuries. You get it in gel-form and rub it onto the damaged part.
Google it.

you gain around 12-14 lbs of muscle a year, max

i think some pros go to about 18

It's not smart to continue training with painkillers, you might not feel it but it will probably make the injury even worse. Pain is there for a reason.

It goes by the brand name "Voltarol", my mum used to get the tablets on prescription for headaches, she has a new Diclofenac based tablets which are alot stronger than the OTC stuff. Need to read the packaging, its definitely alot different from the old stuff.

You are right. I have gained a little fat too. My body was underweight and I gained a lot of muscle quickly for the first month or two. Since then it has been about a pound to a pound and a half a week.

I saw a movie from 1996 with Anthony Ellis in it and then I ran into his website after I had already started my program. It's no joke, I wish I had before and after pictures to show.

I was thinking of taking the anti-inflamatory to help it heal more quickly. Is there a good set time I should stay off of it or is there anything I can do beside keeping the inflamation down?

a) you didn't gain 35 pounds of muscle in 4 months
b) enjoy your elbow tendonitis
c) rest, take anti-inflammatories, ice your elbow, do some light exerises for elbow flexion and extension (with light i mean pink dumbells)
