Sugars are simple carbs, and potatoes are pasta are more complex. Pasta is made from grain, so it's not too hard to figure out that grain is also "carbs". OMG PLANTS ARE CARBS? What did you think they were, wholly protein?
The point is, you're only eating light stuff. Some meat or eggs would give you protein, which would go to muscle rather than fat, and they take longer to digest so they fill you up more. Or you could take the earlier suggestion and eat something fatty, ideally with low sugar, but not too much. Peanut butter, for instance.
