/fit/, a question. Is it better to work out in the morning (i.e. after you've just woken up) or in the evening? Does it matter at all?

I'm a believer in taking in all of my calories for the day before I exercise, content in the notion that I'll be burning them for the rest of the day after that. My friend counters with the notion that exercising in the morning increases your metabolism throughout the day, with various vague health and fitness benefits.

Are either of us right?

it's good to lift weights once you're totally awake and energized, because you can perform better. there is lots of debate about whether cardio should be done immediately in the morning or at other times.

most important is not to worry about when, and do whatever it is you do whenever it works best for you every day.

i can only speak from my experience: morning cardio before breakfast worked best for me

i did 15 minutes my first semester of law school and got in shape (lifted weights and other stuff at other times of the day)

i stopped my 15 mins of running second semester and gained fat back

Cardio in the morning (before breakfast) means your body is using fat stores (and unfortunately, probably breaking down some muscle too) to provide energy for the activity, instead of using glycogen (from eating carbs).

Eat protein/carbs before lifting. Do cardio before eating or after lifting (the glycogen will have been expended from lifting).
