Hey /fit/, I've been considering starting a HIIT routine, mainly because I want to burn fat and gain endurance without suffering through long, boring cardio session. Any suggestions on a routine? I was thinking something like:
Sprint 20 sec
Walk 45 sec - 1 minute
repeat

Criticism/advice?

How is that any different from a cardio routine? As far as entertainment is concerned.

I know what the letters stand for. Why not take your time and ENJOY working out, instead of thinking of ways to make them shorter?

You seem to know what you're talking about. Any routine suggestions for a HIIT beginner?

Do 20 minutes of HIIT 4 times a day every day.

Because taking an hour or two to do cardio doesn't sound like an appealing prospect to me.

10-15 minutes is fine to start with. Basically you do a slow jog for 30-60 seconds, and then sprint HARD for 30-60 seconds, and alternate these until you reach your time limit.

Cool thing about HIIT is it raises your BMR just as much as a much longer cardio workout would.

Quite honestly I don't like HIIT. I hate sprinting. I'll probably end up incorporating it into my exercise routine eventually because it's so damn good for you.

sweet, thanks for the advice. Any idea how quickly a routine like this burns fat?

Depends on your body type, your diet, how many calories you are eating daily and how hard you push yourself.

It gives relatively fast results, and by relatively I mean you might see good results slightly earlier than any other regular cardio regimen.

props for not being one of those faggots who does this with weights or bikes, but that much walking will basically be a rest.

i started out doing 15 sec spring, 30 sec jog. for now i'm still adding 1 interval per week until I get to 15 pairs - then i'm going to start increasing the length of the sprint until i'm at 30 sprint 30 jog for 15 intervals.

That sounds like a good beginning routine, I may give it a try.

People suggesting to do this for 15 minutes haven't done this before. It is very strenuous and you shouldn't start out for more than a few minutes at a time or you will get put off.

Start with 4 or 6 minutes to feel yourself out -- most people don't SPRINT on a regular basis and your legs will fight you for the first training session. Its a new feeling you aren't used to feeling before. Your legs don't feel totally drained of energy - just blown out. Your quads expand a lot when sprinting and this is a different kind of strain than SQUATZ

if anything, do a 4 min session, rest and STRETCH for a few, then do another 4 min session

thanks for the advice. I seriously doubt I'll be able to do more than 4 minutes of this; the lower body is most definitely not my strong point .

Yeah because it's not like you're supposed to do a 5 minute warmup and a 5 minute cooldown for your muscles right?
