Okay, so I'll try to make it uncomplicated. I'm male, about 6'2, 195 pounds and have been trying to loose weight because I've been unhappy with my body for a very long time. I was chubby in middle school, have lost a full pant size since then naturally however I still think of myself as physically underwhelming despite others saying that I'm handsome, cute, etc. I'm painfully shy about it. Very self conscious. That being said I've been going to the gym to do the treadmill more and more (bout 45 minutes a session) and have been doing push-ups, progressing from knee push-ups to now regular pushups. I can do bout 30 now. I'm cutting most sweets from my diet.

The question is, I'm taking measures to make myself look better, are there any tips that I could follow to perhaps get myself a bit more confident and secure about my body mentally?

So I assume you are in high school? Go into the gym more, figure out who the regulars are, find a cool one, ask for his advice. If he isn't an enormous faggot, he should give you some tips for getting MUSSELS. Hopefully work out with you, as well. No harm in asking.

I'm actually 19, college sophomore...

It took me all of highschool to slim out some. Like I said I've lost a full pant size since then. Currently people tell me I don't need to loose weight or anything, that I look fine or look okay, but I don't think so, I still think I look pretty unattractive.

I asked my suite mate who's rather athletic looking as to what I should do perhaps in addition to what I've been already doing (which alone has produced some noticeable results on their own) and all he said he did really different than me were hand weights.

If I am to use hand weights or small barbells (I guess those are the same) are there any movements to do in particular?

I guess some muscles won't hurt, like I don't want to be really muscly at all, just enough that I can look in the mirror and be happy with the way I look. I'd be happy with skinny even.

My ideal weight would probably be 180, so 185 might be a better goal to try...

Anything else I can add to my arsenal to help boost confidence regarding my body? Like I know keep exercising, that's a given, but any other tricks you guys do?

6'2 and 195lbs is about right. i'm the same height and want to hit 200 lbs, 170 at the minute.

self confidence...start doing a contact martial art, like tae kwon do or something. there's nothing like getting hit and hitting others to force you to dig deep and find reserves you never knew your had.

200lbs of muscle is alot less than 195lbs of fat though. Muscle weights 3x as much as fat, so you would probably be quite a bit smaller than op

Probably right. I'm not perfect by any means and am JUST starting to get more upper body strength, as indicated by the push-up building. Before I was chubby I was a very very stringy kid with no strength whatsoever.

Like, my parents and friends all think I look fine, but I think I need to for the sake of feeling better about myself, cause currently I could criticize everything that's wrong with me physically and I'd like to erase that.

Hence asking bout healthier mind-set tips in addition to the exercising. I've tried repetition of positive phrases in my head, but it always feels contrived.
