Ive been involved in martial arts my whole life... i always thought wrestling and ground fighting was gay. I joined a new MMA-style gym... and ive fallen in love with JJ ^_^ anyone else as well?
>> Anonymous
Most fighting ends up on the ground anyways, why try to avoid it?

BJJ is awesome, they teach us that stuff in the Army.
>> Anonymous
I guess OP left...
>> Anonymous
Grappling is fun I guess. Just not as much fun as striking. Nothing more satisfying than knocking someone out cold.
>> Anonymous
>>440087
I disagree.

Choking out a guy with your legs who is twice is big as you is more satisfactory.
>> roar Anon
OP here - "Most fighting ends up on the ground anyways, why try to avoid it?" true but all fights start standing up.. right?
>> Anon
I think there is just a primal rage that i feel, when your mounted on someone, just ground n' pounding... very satisfying
>> Anonymous
>>440095
With my training, if I get into a fight, I'm doing a double-leg straight to mount and pommeling the fuck out of him.

Getting him to the ground as fast as possible, and if he stands up, fuck it, I'm better on my back.

I have a plethora of sweeps, then I would just embarrass them with a gogoplata or something.

>>440095
The chances of a fight ending (with one opponent disabled) while both opponents are standing is next to nil. Strikes, while painful, are not very disabling, and a truly determined opponent will not even flinch to most strikes. However, blood chokes and arm/leg locks WILL disable an opponent, very quickly too, and 95% of them start on the ground.
>> Anonymous
>>440113

Cool, you can shoot. You've officially learned wrestling 101. Now, how about an opponent that knows to sprawl or has halfway decent takedown defence? And who's to say that if you do get to the ground they won't be able to scramble and take the top position or even get to their feet? Unless you mean to go with the good ol' buttflop and shrimp your way over to him before the fight even starts. In which case you'd better start hoping that he's alone and that you can grab his foot as he's kicking away at your ribs/head.

>>440123

The chance of disabling someone with standing strikes is next to nil? Haven't you ever heard of a knockout? Untrained strikers are as awful at striking as untrained grapplers are at grappling. At the risk of sounding like an internet tuffguy, I'm around 99% sure that I could KO just about any str33tf1ght3r in the first 5-10 seconds of the fight.

a KO is part of that 5%, thing is, a striker can't strike when in grapple, well, at least not as efficiently, and most grapplers only focus on take downs to get into a dom position, minorly focusing on strikes.

You can get doorknobbed (straight kick) in the head and still be standing, but you can't survive a blood choke once It's locked in.

Anyways, both sides of the argument are moot, striking, takedown, and grappling are all important in a fight.
>> Anonymous
Who cares about hypothetical fight situations? The fact of the matter is, MMA requires a higher level of competition than most other combat sports. More variables=more strategies=better competition
>> Anonymous
Sorry, but Karate is much better. All-round ftw :>

I remember they taught us basic Wrestling in PE class over a week, and some Jin Jitsu senior came in to help teach us some stuff. They always put me up against the other asian kid who was a medium weight, and we'd always end in a tie. The last match was him basically owning me for 3/4 of the match, then me turning it around in the last seconds by saving my strength.

I thought it was pretty gay ass shit at first, but then it was awesome.

Grappling isn't all it's cracked up to be, due to the fact you have eyes, ears, throat, loose bits of flesh, and the undersides of peoples armpits and thighs are very sensitive.

Ever hear of chin-na? There's lots of grappling styles like that all over asia.
>> Anonymous
>>440742
Actually I was referencing chin na with those tactics as they are an intrinsic part of chin na, tearing off bits ff people, blinding them, and removing their trachea.
>> Anonymous
>>440751

I figured that, and that you were using grappling in reference to BJJ and MMA. Yea, chin-na's more for combat and self-defense styles than for the sport fighting
>> Anonymous
>>440763
Sorry I wasn't specific about which type of grappling I was talking about. I meant that bjj and mma usually do not take into account self defense related strategies that you might actually encounter i.e. someone actually trying to hurt or kill you.

Also I wonder what people in the big cities of brazil think about bjj, what with all the gun and knife crime.

Two words: Multiple Attackers
If there are multiple attackers, ground fighting is THE worst idea. Can you imagine any reasons as to why this might be? I sure hope so.
>> Anonymous
Ground fighting is great for sport fighting, terrible for street fighting.

Words of the wise.
>> Anonymous
>>440966
Even if its terrible for being outnumbered, its still something good to have on the odd chance that you're up against only one person.
>> Anonymous
>>441141
I agree. In certain situations, grappling can help minimize injury that you might receive in a messy one-on-one street fight (instead of trading blows, you just take the guy down.)
>> Anonymous
Grapplers can do dirty tricks as well. They can take you down and then start eye gouging or what not.

And two words: common sense. If a whole hoard of people are attacking you, you're probably running away rather than engaging in any type of fighting.

Or does Kung Fu/Aikido teach you that your magical inner Ki will blast them away while you fly around?
>> Anonymous
>>441157

>>440966here, I wasn't trying to say that grapplers sucked, just saying that it wasn't perfect form of combat. There are no perfect styles. Each has their own weaknesses and strengths. It's all about the individual fighter, not style.
>> Anonymous
More like legal vs illegal fighting. Proven martial arts (like grappling, wrestling and kickboxing/boxing) are better in legal fighting. And quite simply, having numbers on your side, using guns, using knives are better in illegal fighting. There really is no place for martial arts that are ineffective, like aikido.

Yeah, because of all the lava and AIDS needles on the str33ts.

Um..but wait. Grappling teaches you how to beat one opponent, but not multiple. Striking teaches you how to beat multiple opponents, but not one. Oh shit! Multiple opponents are multiples of single opponents. So if ten guys attack you you're okay if you're a krotty student unless of course one of them decides to choke the shit out of you while the other nine watch. Then you're fucked again. Got it.

Ring is harder than street because in the ring there are more likely going to be TWO real fighters/athletes.
>> Anonymous
>>441160

Yeah it depends on the individual. But if all else is equal, modern grappling, while isn't the perfect art, is more effective and more efficient. Of course we're not going to find a perfect martial art, but why not settle for one of the better choices? Until you can find a fighting competition that allows striking in the genitals and biting and hair pulling, BJJ + wrestling is the better choice for ground based fighting. And dirty boxing + kickboxing for stand up fighting.
>> Anonymous
You're all faggots.

Sports grapplers are a fuckton less likely to do dirty tricks in the streets because they don't actively train to do them with muscle memory or in general. You talk about how all these sports guys can in theory do this so called dirty fighting. But do they actually train to do it. There is a reason a guy can mashout a perfect strategy of kicks, punches and takedowns in the ring, because he actively trains to do it over and over again, and why a woman will probably not be able to pull out and use pepper spray in time to disorient the attacker(not to mention the attacker probably won't fall down and the woman won't know how to deal with a flailing assailant because she never has generally experienced it). Training matters and generally sports fighters don't train to do the dirty stuff or else they would find themselves accidentally using it in the ring and get disqualified and possibly face jail time.

Also multiple attackers won't attack like a single person. They will use attacks coordinated with each other or one at a time. If they both rush you at the same time they have to make sure not to get in each oters way because generally they think of each other as comrades which hinders them and they can even collide into each other's attack. One person to distract you, the other person to make the kill. Humans have organizational and team work skills and they use them.

Of all the stupid fucking arguments. I almost never ever train for self defense, but the last time I did I could recognize chances to do shots the to groin, head butts, and chances to bite someones ears off as easily as I could see chances to do the stuff I normally train to do.
>> Anonymous
>>441266

You won't remember recognize or take advantage of those openings you stupid faggot because you aren't used to going for that area or move and it will be fucking akward as all hell. You recognize andget close to the percieved dirty target but you you actually put your teeth on the ear or stop your foot barely on the crotch part of the boxing short fabric, do you just lightly tap the other person's head with your head? No you don't you fucking fudge the move very noticeably, you don't imagine what the move can do, nor do you feel what it can do in your mind. You are training yourself to not hit the target when you have the opportunity to do so.
>> Anonymous
>>441278
Because spontaneous movement nevers occurs right? Fucking armchair fighters.
>> Anonymous
Spontaneous movement does not occur when you train not to do it.
>> Anonymous
lol i only train this motion so there can be no deviation cuz i r robutt.
>> Anonymous
Okay maybe I didn't clarify, spontaneous motion with a definite purpose does not occur in a fight if you do not train for it. A fight is a very high stress situation and parts of your mind very easily forget things. This is where muscle memory and training come in. A trained combatant will use his skills he has trained just as if he was a trained computer typist that had to rapidly transcribe sensitive and fast paced talks perfectly. By using rote memory.

Judofag here. Been doing it for about a month now. It's really fun and a really good workout. Before that, never did any martial arts or wrestling. Never really roughhoused with friends or siblings when I was younger. It's something totally new and foreign to me.

Unfortunately, a couple Wednesdays back, a few people there were getting ready to go to a tournament the following weekend, so we did a lot of randori. It was my first time doing randori, and I got thrown on my back. Hard. I'm pretty sure I cracked a rib and did something to my back. I don't think it's anything serious, though, and hopefully practice tomorrow won't aggravate it too much.

Anyway, ground fighting is much more fun than standing fighting, but being able to grip fight and throw someone on their back is much more useful if you're in a fight. Also, in sport judo, if you don't throw your opponent well enough, you have to keep your opponent on his back for 25 seconds, make him tap, break his arm, or choke him until he taps or passes out, most of which would be ideal in a real fight.
>> Grognor's Big Day Off
>>440072
In 50% of fights 1 person goes to the ground. This is the person getting their ass kicked.

Ground fighting is not inevitable like these people preaching BJJ is. Do you know what happens if you try to tackle or grapple with somebody proficient in the striking arts without knowing advanced BJJ? You get KTFO.
>> Anonymous
Groundfighting would not be ideal in street fighting. However, there is always the chance that someone will tackle you from behind or mount you. In these situations, not training groundfighting would put you at a disadvantage, because they would be on top and you would have no idea how to get out.
>> Anonymous
so bring a fucking knife/gun/bottle/hard object to the fight
problem solved.

I thought the same, until i joined the wrestling eam at my high school and then i got into judo, and im glad i got into it.
>> Anonymous
>>441278
A stupid fucking argument from a stupid fucking idiot. No one actually trains things like kicking the groin or gouging the eyes realistically. Not only would you end up with a bunch of blind eunuchs if you tried, but most of the dirty moves don't even take any training to be able to perform under stress. Do you think Tyson trained ear biting for when he fought Holyfield? Of course he didn't. You don't need training to do that sort of thing. The same goes groin kicking and even head butting in most positions.
>> Anonymous
>>442630

You're just practicing on a dummy and equipment still. So

1.) You're not practicing on a human so it is irrelevant
2.) This training is not exclusive to your shitty unproven martial art
