Hey /fit/ quick question. I'm an extremely fast eater. I heard from a few people that eating quick isn't good for the body since it doesn't digest at a steady pace or some shit. I always shrugged it off since most of the people telling me didn't seem like they knew wtf they were talking about. So I come here to ask, is eating fast a bad thing? Does it matter? Should I slow down?

There are things people say...It gives you gas (you intake more air when you eat fast, leading to gas).

They say if you chew more you aid the digestion process because you are using more saliva and mashing the food up I guess.

They say if you eat slower, you will feel full sooner. I guess this is because it takes 20 minutes or so for the body to feel full after eating...

I used to eat fast, but I started to slow down. I lost about 10 pounds, but I also stopped drinking anything but milk, water and the occasional diet soda/natural fruit juice. I also started to incorporate cardio into my workout. But it's not like I had much to lose. I was only 160 at the time (5'10'').

Anyway, I don't think it's horrible for you, but it's more polite and there are probably some benefits to eating a little slower. Just focus on it while you are eating and it will become a habit pretty quickly.

I am a soon to graduate from a degree in the medical field, and have had several nutrition based classes at the undergraduate level. I am therefore not claiming to be an expert.

I have never in my textbooks seen anything related to eating quickly as being a risk factor for any eating disorder, illness or disease. Nor have in any of my clinical and hospital rotations, ever seen eating quickly as a diagnosis, or a causative agent for any illness of any patient I have encountered suffering from a GI problem, and I would estimate that 50% of all hospital trips outside of trauma are GI related. I think it is just "be polite" bullshit passed down from generation to generation. It is about as relevant to your health, as not putting your elbows on the table.

Of course, if you fucking jam shit down your throat without chewing, you could strain your esophagus, or choke, but I really don't think that is what we are talking about here.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I remember learning in high school that when you eat too fast, your body doesn't tell you that you're full fast enough, and that causes you to eat more than you should.

It takes 20 minutes for your body to catch up to you being full.
