Running....

Lets talk about it.

How do you do it? What gear (shoes) do you use? Where do you run? How long?

I run a lot (15-20 miles a week) in addition to five days of weight lifting but I take it very informally. Aside from some cheapish running shoes, I usually just put on gym shorts and a wifebeater and I'm good to go.

Usually I go 3-4 miles at a time, or double that if I feel lazy. As for when and where, it doesn't matter to me; depends on the day, the weather, my schedule, and my mood. I'll run anytime from 6am in the morning to 4am cause I'm bored. Outdoor running is the easiest because you don't have to usually worry about clogged tracks or eyeing a treadmill track, and you can just let yourself zone out and huff along. But a good track or treadmill are great in a pinch.

This board preaches HIIT, and they should, because it's a wonderful program, but I can't get my cardio in that way. I'd rather just do something that's meditative for me and enjoy it, than hating what I'm doing.

I used to do 16-20 miles a week. All I can say is have good form and do proper strength/stretching exercises or you will fuck something up eventually.

are you supossed to stretch before or after the run?

...HIIT?

you want some good fitting shoes that will protect you. I got some nike free shoes, they are good but if you run on concrete you will get shin splint. if you starting out running do it slow, just 1-2 miles and then walk for like 2 miles? after that you can do more

High intensity training im guessing. If im right its running as fast as you can for 30 secs then jogging and repeating or doing a bunch of reps of something then 30 sec of down time.

Dynamic stretching before, static stretching after. You can google the terms for more information.

If you've had any previous joint pains, or if you're a bigger guy, you'll want to get good shoes or orthodics, and pay attention to the surfaces you're running on.

Arn't static stretches bad?

I run a HIIT cycle wearing Tims in the Berkeley hills.

I usually run about 10 miles a week but sometimes run up to 40 if I have the time. I have some nike running shorts and some new balance shoes and some bandaids to put on my nipples if it is so cold I have to wear a shirt.

not so much shoes as it is socks. I'd suggest a cheap pair of socks which aren't Cotton. Wal-Mart has cheap ass "Starter" brand socks which are decent, otherwise I suggest New Balance Brand if you're richfag

I'm up to about 3-4 miles a day. I take Fridays off for intramural ultimate games and Saturdays because I turn into a lazy fuck when I go home from college on the weekends to work.

If it's nice outside, I run around the campus on the sidewalks. It's got a good variety of uphill, downhill, and flats. There's also some woods trails. If I get brave, I might run those some time.

If it's cold, I run on the track at the gym. I did tonight.

I don't stretch as often as I should. I stretched tonight, but I don't know if it was enough or if I stretched all the muscles I needed to. Anyone want to post their stretching routine?

I'm not sure how my form is. I need to go running with my serious runner friends sometime and get advice from them.

I have New Balance Zips. I'm not sure they're right for my feet; I bought them before I was serious about running. I have slightly flat feet.

I don't listen to music while I run. I have an XBOX HUEG Zune 30. It's too bulky to run with, and I don't want to mess up the HDD.

i run on the beach
its about a hundred times harder than any other surface and i only wear a bathing suit. the first and last part of my normal route is about a mile of nude beach, so i start nude and near the end of it put on my bikini top & bottom and at the end of my run i take them off crossing the boundary and rinse of nude in the ocean after that last mile. no shoes needed and no crushing high impact on the concrete either

I run about 3 miles a day unless I do HIIT early in the morning. I really enjoy LSD running though, so I've been slowly phasing HIIT out. Trying to put together a decent 5k time for a few local races.

Anyone mind posting a respectable 5k time for someone who has never run a race before? Just having fun and running isn't something I'm serious about, but I figured this might be fun and a cool way to meet hot chicks.

Also, how does one stretch?

I will start running again, barefoot and ball first, probably at 1-2 miles a day and build up to 5. Currently trying to gain some weight, so my cardio has been going to shit.

Five days per week, 3.5 miles per day total (1.75 miles at 6:30ish before work and then another 1.75 when I get home around 6-6:30 PM)

My neighborhood is three segments long, and when I first started running, I'd essentially do one lap. Eventually, that came to one lap + one segment, then one lap + two segments, and now just two laps per run

A good time would be 22-23 minutes for a casual first timer.

If you're more serious about it you could try for something sub-21.

If you've never run a 5k before, and are just looking to finish somewhere in the middle, I would shoot for ~23 minutes, just so you get a feel for what running in a race is like.
It seems like it would be routine, but it's a different experience.

Brooks shoes and just some gym shorts and a collared shirt.

Run pretty infrequently, and for about 3 miles if I'm running at all.

Brooks shoes, I alternate every other day, 2.5 miles/4 miles, both on concrete. I'm getting bored though so I'll have to change it up soon.

i need to buy me some proper running shoes (been running in rather casual and flat adidas shoes) until my left foot has started hurting somewhat

BUT THEY'RE ALL SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE, jesus christ, the cheapest pair i've seen in the sports shop i went to was like 75 bucks

anyone got any protips on which ones to buy? i best make the choice a good one for that money

try new insoles, they make insoles specifically for running, but they cost $10-15. Also buy some socks that are durable and have some cushion. I wouldn't really try new shoes unless they are in bad shape or if your feet continue to hurt after wearing them.

Those flexible nikes but i heard they're bad for the knees. I'm getting some new balance or asics this year.

I run once or twice a day, with morning before my first meal and right after my weight training being my key times. Unfortunately, I'm not enough of a man to run for more than 4 miles at any given time, but I partially attribute that to my having to run on crappy Michigan sidewalks.

For equipment, I use my regular gym shorts and a shirt that's not too filthy to use, plus an iPod shuffle for the MUZAKS. Oh, and a hoodie as of right now, because it's still cold as fuck here.
