Whats a better fat-burning cardio program for running on a gym track? A straight-shot, run-as-long-as-you-can approach or one where you run collectively a longer distance with walk laps/rests in between.

I ask this because today I ran 1.5 miles consecutively, but was only able to run 3 more laps after I took a break (aprox. 1/4 of a mile.)

Last time I went I ran a total of 3.2 miles (4 kilometers) But I took a walking lap and a brief
rest every 13 laps.

Should I keep working on my endurance run and just get it up to my distance with breaks? Or just get in the most distance as possible while taking rests.

tl;dr
Whats better, running longer or running more?

The best way to do cardio for fat loss is HIIT. Which is basically interval sprinting.

It's hard, it sucks, but it works.

Unfortunately my gym doesn't allow sprinting/racing on the track. (It's full of old people)

I've been hearing a lot about HIIT on /fit/, but to be honest I think it would rip me apart.
I was suprised I could even do a 1/4 mile the first time I stepped on the track.

Would stopping between runs fuck up my heart rate too much to be worth it?

Could someone explain a basic HIIT regimen to me?
Wikipedia was not helpful at all...

30 seconds sprint/30 seconds jog

repeat until you collapse

and then do one more sprint :D

Thanks for the link!
Here's another question, I'm currently not doing any exercise at all, but I'm also not fat (5'10", 150, ~21%).
Should I start out doing plain old long-haul jogging first, and then try to move into HIIT, or to just start out with sprint/rest periods and just make them better/longer as I get stronger?

Basically instead of starting out with light jogging for 30 minutes and then collapsing should I start out trying to HIIT for about 10-15 minutes and then collapsing.

Unless you live in Norway or one of them other countries it's -9C all year long, just run outside.
