So, /fit/, I'm about thru hike the AT. I'm leaving thursday and shooting for 5.5 months or so of time. My question is about how much weight can I expect to lose? (Not that I want to lose weight, just that I'm wondering how this is going to affect me.) Will I lose body fat? Will I gain weight by building muscle? All of the above? Total fitness noob here.

I'm 18, I'm 6'3", and I weigh 150-160 (can't remember.)

I know I can do it, I've hiked for weeks at a time before. Just never this fuckin long.

Yeah, that's totally why I came here, to tell myself the answer to my question.

addendum:

if you haven't done practice hikes, you will die

For a guy your size that's rather skinny. Probably lose even more weight and have a much more toned lower body.

Cool, that's a pretty similar build. Thanks. If this thread is still around in 6 months I'll post results.

Number of people that come to an internet imageboard asking how much weight they will lose after hiking six months in the wild: One.

Number of people assured to be made fun of on said imageboard once news report of death airs: TBA.

OP here. What kind of pussy dies on the AT? You're never more than like a week from an arbys.

Also, I'm curious, if I take creatine while I'm out on the trail, will I be able to hike harder better faster stronger and charge mah leg muscles faster?

Or should I just fuck that and continue to eat ramen and lipton dinners?

trail meals:
mountain house meals (and their "mary Jane's brownies" ganja free, but highly tasty)

MREs (be sure to boil that jelly... it gets all the nasty lumps out)

ramen

pick any fruits/nuts/edibles/etc. you see, they are godsends of wonderful flavor... just be sure you know what you're eating so you don't end up like Chris McCandless

Appalachian Trail.

Not a big hiker here, but tbh, I'd say you'd lose weight. You lose weight when you are in a caloric deficit (eating less calories than you burn). I'm not sure what you'll be eating, but you'll probably be burning a lot of calories walking for long periods of time. You lose some muscle mass.

I leave tomorrow, where can I buy MREs?

Yeah I know. That's why I'm askan. My guess is that I'll just burn off what body fat I have and then bulk up on lower body muscle?

Oh, you're one of those "fast metabolism" people. I loathe and envy you.
I hope World War 3 comes around and when the great famine strikes, we'll see who has the superior genes!

I'm the same way... no matter how I eat, I don't gain (or lose) more than 10 pounds or so from my base (150)

I've had periods of eating very little and periods of eating like a damn porker.... the thing is, when I'm eating little, I aim for healthy and filling.... When I'm eating lots I still go for only healthy things....

I only drink beverages other than milk, water, tea, and gatorade socially (or when a restaurant doesn't serve tea)
also, another trail food I forgot is Richmoor brand camping foods.... they are efficient and not too untasty (many require a pot though...)

PS - pilot biscuits are GODLY

Why isn't OP prepared? You should have planned and bought all your gear and food supplies weeks ago. I have a feeling this isn't going to turn out so well for you.

don't you like, have a job?

AT thru hikers only do it to say they did, few complete the trip and nobody has ever told me they enjoyed it. most hate hiking the rest of their lives.
those that make it past the first month tend to fail with permanent ankle injuries (yes, permanent, as in you will limp the rest of you life) or stress fractures near the VA/TN border. to avoid this you need at least one day off every two weeks.
