that will never come to use in your everyday life

it's like learning to play the ukulele

>> Anonymous
... i wish i could play the ukulele now

all he needs to do is take a step back or turn when you put the first leg on him and you're fucked
>> gay
that's AWESOME!!!

next time i get in a fight i'll ask the dude to set me up for a move instead of rushing my face with his fists. Hope it works!
>> Anonymous
Why didn't he just kick him in the face?
>> Anonymous
Just wanted to say that I can play the ukulele. It's awesome.

I can too. But I goddamn hate the sound of the wretched thing. Stick to proper instruments.
>> Anonymous
I bet you actually could get away with this in a fight because absolutely no one would see it coming.

BJJ doesn't come off as a real martial art to me, it seems like a fad in martial arts. Mainly because of the people representing it come off as pretentious self-glorifying jerk-offs and like 75% of BJJ guys thinking about how bad ass they are on the street. Shit's just annoying imo.
>> Anonymous
>>425012
Seconded. Also Capoeria is also filled with self-glorifying douches.
>> Anonymous
anyone else notice that MMA has become synonymous with 'bjj and muay thai' to the point that it shouldnt be called MMA anymore, just start callin the fuckin things BJJ tournaments that allow striking
>> Anonymous
>>425314

I don't know about MMA as a whole but UFC definitely.
>> Anonymous
>>425314

I agree completely, the rules are basically catered around BJJ. Wtf, no kicking people on the ground or elbows when they're down? Those two techniques alone make BJJ worthless.

wow you must fucking suck at playing it and don't know any good musicians who play it.

Get an ear for music or get back to your fender squire electric guitar and play some more smells like teen spirit you fucking twat.

Care to explain why BJJ did so well in Pride where kicking downed opponents was allowed?
>> Anonymous
>>425432

PRIDE and DREAM rules allowed kicks and stomps to a downed opponent, and UFC allows elbows to a downed opponent.

Seeing as how the DREAM ratings are terrible and the UFC ratings are skyrocketing, the UFC is about to become the only big player in MMA.

yeah, thats why boxing is the most practical art to learn. I think America would be much better off if they taught kids boxing from an early age. Nothing intense, but every day for 30 minutes have goods do some drills, some mitt work and once a week do light sparring.

Nothing like confident citizens to make a country run well.
>> Anonymous
>>425433
Punch idiots in the face? That's easy.
>> Anonymous
>>425449
Teaching wrestling would be more practical though, and just as effective. The best part is that kids already love to wrestle each other. You would just be teaching them proper technique.
>> Anonymous
>>425450
lol sure buddy...sure...get in a few fights and you'll realize that throwing well executed and precise punches is not easy, even if its against drunk batsards. You're the type of guy who lifts his back foot off the ground when throwing a punch, arent you?
>> Anonymous
>>425453
you're right dude. Wrestling is GREAT for self defense without teaching kids to be TOO aggressive. Its more about control. I'd rather see a kid getting pinned into a locker than a kid getting his head smashed in and his jaw broken.

I mean, i would rather not see either one but kids are going to fight and its better to equip them with proper skills.
>> Anonymous
>>425449
>>425453
Sadly with the pussification of the western world in general it will never happen. That's why if you ever become a parent you have to be proactive and make sure your kids get at least some exposure to this sort of thing.
>> Anonymous
>>425454
>well executed and precise punches
Who said anything about well executed and precise?
>> Anonymous
>>425463

I don't think wrestling and boxing will ever be huge again, but at least in America the most popular high school sport is football. Doesn't teach proper fighting skills, but it does teach aggressiveness, which is the antithesis of pussiness.
>> Anonymous
>>425508
One of the big problems is that there aren't any boxers or wrestlers that are household names or role models any more. Ask someone to name a boxer and you'll probably get Ali or Tyson as your only answers, but they're retired. Ask someone to name a wrestler and you'll probably get some pro wrasslin idiot as your answer.

football is such a shit sport..it doesnt teach anything useful aside "team work".

I could get into football if you want me too but I'm not sure if it's even worth it. It's not that its a bad sport but it replaced alot of the things that sports like boxing and wrestling taught with lesser but more gratifying values like all out aggressiveness, favoritism, and all the shit yout hink of when you think of Division I college athletes.
>> Anonymous
might work in a bjj tournament.
>> Anonymous
>>425508
No, it teaches kids to be uniformed robots. Aggression is not remotely involved.
>> Anonymous
>>426003
If I was a ref I'd give someone 5 points just for making a half decent attempt at it.
>> Anonymous
Actually, in the early days of MMA, Muay Thai and BJJ was extremely good. There were no gloves and almost no rules (those were no strikes to the crouch and to the eyes).

Note: if your traditional martial arts rely solely punching a guy in the balls, then it probably sucks. On the other hand, MMA users are also capable of dirty tricks - just because it's not allowed in the ring doesn't mean it's not allowed on the street.
>> Anonymous
Football is also a very dangerous sport. Major injuries and deaths aren't exactly uncommon. To be fair though boxing isn't really much better, since it's based on pummeling each others heads.

Wrestling is reasonably safe, but it could be safer if Judo style break falls were introduced. I can't count the number of times a wrestler has visited my Judo club and didn't even know how to fall safely.
>> Anonymous
And in MMA, there's no one advocated style. You use whatever you have to win. It's just that kickboxing and jiu jitsu/wrestling is more often used than other styles. Think of it as Bruce Lee's philosophy, which is based on efficiency and well roundedness.
>> Anonymous
>>426034
It sounds counter intuitive, but doctors have actually recommended that boxing should go back to being bare knuckle because it's safer that way. The reasoning is that without the gloves and wraps punching the head is much less attractive. Body shots would become more common, and while they would hurt they wouldn't be as dangerous as being hit in the head all the time.

I don't like these martial arts where everything starts with you, or the other guy holding onto your shirt.
>> Anonymous
>>426549
I do Judo. We start by grabbing the other guys shirt.
>> Anonymous
>>426550
judo must be pretty good, it is what they taught the people in police tech as a self-defence thing.

i was doing ninjitsu for a while, and although i'm sure my teacher could kill most people quite easily, the whole method of teaching me moves from the assumption that the aggressor is holding onto my collar sucked.
>> Anonymous
>>426550

It's stupid, nobody grabs you by the sleeve, or even the arm. Judo, Aikido, and Hapkido spend an inordinate amount of time on that shit.
>> Anonymous
>>426554
Judo doesn't give much of a damn where someone grabs you. We grab the other guy regardless of what they're doing, and slam them into the ground.
