And I'll bet I drink 0% more than you.

So, what, are you bragging about not drinking alcohol? That's cool, but...so?
>> Anonymous
You know it is healthier to drink a little alcohol than none at all, right?

Small amounts of certain alcohol (Red Wine is the most common) can help ward off things like heart disease.

A glass of wine once a night helps fight heart disease and high blood pressure, I believe.

One sauce: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alcohol/SC00024

also, just google health benefits of alcohol

Moderate drinking FTMFW

Enjoy your higher risk of heart attack and stroke...

Actually I don't really care much about all that. I just love margaritas

And I didn't get laid much until I started drinking and loosening up...

Virgins might want to try the social lubricant

The liver pretty universally hates alcohol. Rest of the body thinks it is A.O.K.

Its actually in our genetics to handle alcohol, if you are a cracker like me.

The American Indians were wiped out partially by alcohol, much like the English back in the 16th century when everyone got easy access to gin. The weak genetic types die out/livers can't handle it. The rest of us are descendants of those whose bodies tolerate it and even are healthier with small amounts.

tl;dr Abstinence is weird, antisocial behavior

Drinking and getting drunk are two different things. A beer or a glass of wine every once in a while is going to do jack all to you. Getting drunk on the other hand is pretty bad for you.

I've never had more than a shot of anything in my life and I manage to get laid just fine. Maybe people should work on why they're so awkward instead of often dangerous social lubricants.

Wow, that's the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. American Indians were wiped out because they were weaker for not being able to handle alcohol?
Of course, I guess they were genetically inferior for not having firearms or an immunity to smallpox too. Right?

I probably didn't explain well enough. EVERY population has its weakness to alcohol, Northern Europeans who had a predisposed weakness died out 700 years ago, American Indians, more recently have had there population thinned of people who couldn't handle alcohol.

Its a rough generalization, also a well regarded theory for anyone interested in history and physiology/genetics.

And I was a little shy, nothing terribly wrong with that, a few beers can loosen you up. Just a suggestion for some, you obviously don't need it.

I guess its just, I am from WI. We don't truly trust anyone who doesn't drink...

I understand the point you're making re: alcohol weakness, but I hardly see that as a legitimate Darwinian kind of argument.

I also understand why some people feel the need for alcohol to ease social interactions. People at my college are so damn awkward hardly anyone would interact at all if it weren't for that. Contrary to the way I sound I'm not opposed to them, but I personally disagree with the alleged necessity of alcohol. I've seen it ruin (and end) too many lives and turn otherwise respectable people into assholes, so I'm biased.
I realize casual drinking does not = drunk, but for the sake of context that's the experience I'm coming from.

The idea is that any population exposed to a new substance will have some react quite poorly to it. Those poor bastards die of while the others have better biological tools to deal with it, ie different liver function. This is then passed on to children who will be able to be able to put up with constant exposure to the substance.

Be it alcohol, small pox, bird flu...

And you are right, if it turns you into an asshole, do something else...

I see what you're saying While it seems strange to me at first to apply evolutionary selection to something like the presence of alcohol, it does make perfect sense.
