Yes, but Weight Watchers is a gimmick just like Nutrisystem or Atkins or whatever.

I love those commercials that are like "I LOST WEIGHT AND I GOT TO EAT CHOCOLATE HURF DURF". WELL NO FUCKING SHIT, YOU LOWERED YOUR OVERALL CALORIES AND HAD A TREAT DAY EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, OF COURSE YOU LOST WEIGHT, MILLIONS OF US KNOW THE SAME FUCKING THING BUT WE DIDN'T PAY OUT THE ASS AND GO TO MEETINGS AND A BUNCH OF OTHER ASSSHIT TACOFUCK.

With 30 minutes of walking, yeah, cause he'll probably only burn like 200 calories provided he cover about two miles. Science has dictated that, on average, you burn 100 calories per mile traveled on foot, regardless of the speed you travel. Going faster obviously has benefits to your cardiovascular system, metabolism, and overall efficiency since you're able to cover more distance in a shorter amount of time. However, should OP walk for, say, 1.5 hours, he'll burn a decent amount of calories, more so if he's working on an incline.

tl;dr: Yes, OP. You're cutting calories and exercising. That is how we ALL lose weight.

Do you even know what BMI is or are you just assuming everyone on 4chan is obese?

You missed the joke, Chuckles.

i would say this though, dont freaking WALK unless you are like obese. if you are in such good cardio that it is easy to run 10 miles how could you NOT be lean? plus walking will yield no permanent improvement and is for pussies.

Way to make sense. No reputable source relies on BMI.

Walking is just a less intense version of jogging. It still does the same things. It increases your pulse, it works all of your lower leg muscles, it keeps you in a high aerobic state. You can walk your way to 5% body fat if you put enough time into it. Science is science.

This isn't to say it's somehow more effective than jogging or running, I'm just saying walking is the EXACT same exercise just at a slower pace and usually done for longer periods of time. It's ideal for people with knee or foot problems or people who are at risk for problems if they increase their heart rate too much. Intense exercise is NOT good for everyone, keep that in mind. If the difference between walking and jogging means the difference between whether your knee buckles or you have a heart attack...I'm fairly certain you should walk.

But, yes, it would be ideal to jog or run if you are able to. Some people just prefer walking for an hour to running for a half hour, it can be largely a matter of personal choice and overall you're still investing relatively the same amount of effort into either exercise. Running at five miles per hour for 30 minutes isn't that much different than walking at three miles per hour for an hour...in fact, the walking in this scenario is actually covering more distance.

What an amazingly intellectual counterpoint. You should try Lincoln-Douglas debating.

OP here: I'm going to be attending the gym (I used to go, then stopped..but I'm going to start again) 4 days a week, mostly doing the stationary bike and elliptical machine. I'll start out at 30min (15min of each), and make my way up. Is there a point where I should stop after a certain amount of time?

as a judge i can say i would sooner vote up an awesome response like that than a boring drawn out argument.

Walking does not induce a high aerobic state. You need to get your heart rate up around 150 or 160, depending on your age. Walking probably wont get you more than 120, at the very best.

Don't do 15 minutes on each. Pick one of the other and do it for at least 20 minutes. Ideally, do it for 45 minutes to an hour if you want some real progress.

Try 4-5 MPH racewalking and I bet you'll disagree. You walk at the same pace a lot of people jog, yet you take a lot more steps at a faster pace. I'm in fairly good shape, 170 pounds and 6'2" and I racewalk on the treadmill daily, always gets my pulse to 180 or higher and causes a good sweat.

It all depends how you do it. A lot of people have this preconceived notion that when someone says they "walk" they're taking some kind of casual stroll to the corner market and back. I personally do it because it's less impact on my knees, one of which is already in pretty bad shape from a soccer injury years ago.

Also, your heart rate is not a good gauge to judge how much fat you're burning. It's about as silly as thinking the more you sweat the more calories you burn.

Yes you will. just stick to the diet!
