No, not entirely true. I'll break it down, there are 3 basic types of macronutrients that you body can process: Carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Alcohol is a bastard child, in the fact that the body can't process it straight. The body has to break it down into usable parts, acetate and fat. Acetate is immediately used as fuel, while fat gets stored. The problem with this is that while acetate is used, the three main macros are ignored, leading to weight gain.
Spirits are mostly alcohol, depending on the percentage, while beer has alcohol AND carbohydrates.
