SUP /FIT/?

I'd really like to get into jogging (then possibly running) because my thighs need some toning to do. I've been able to tone the outter part of my thighs, but not the inside. I've been working out recently and did 50 sets of squats all of February, then elevated to 100 sets of squats. There's little change...

OH YA. How do I overcome being paranoid/afraid of people watching me run/jog? ;_; I'm always thinking that people look at me all " HEY LOOK A CHUBSTER PERSON RUNNING! " ;_; ;_; ;_;

How does one start a daily jogging routine? Or should I start off with walking for thirty minutes for a week, then jogging?

I no nothing about jogging, but people will respect fatties running more than walking (since walking looks more like a point A to point B activity). Still, if you want to ignore them listen to music.

Fuck, I'm a n00b.

my legs were not toned at all. I picked up a heavy bag and a double end bag and even just doing that has significantly given my legs more definition. I'm sure it would be the same as running. For comparison the pedometer says its aprox. 3-4 miles of "running" or w/e per each session with the bag. Anything that has you moving around will help to get definition. I don't get the 50 squats of all febuary, is this like two sets a day or what? You may want to up the weight and take days off to allow for healing.

Fuck I'm retarded. I meant that I did 5 sets of 10 / 50 squats mostly throughout Feb., then on the last week of Feb I elevated to 100 squats.

I wouldn't sweat anyone watching -- it's always admirable seeing someone run or jog (or even walk). I don't think anything other than "Cool, they're concerned with fitness." If you feel conspicuous at first, it will soon wear off. (Although it's normal to feel extra motivation when people are within viewing distance, especially of the opposite sex, haha.)

I don't know exactly where you are fitness wise, but I'd recommend actually jogging if you can (even if you go as slow as walking, the extra movement is very beneficial). Don't kill yourself on the first day and then decide you hate it -- just pick a route or amount of time and continue moving at whatever pace you can to achieve it. Seriously, you can slow down to a fucking snail's crawl, just keep jogging.

When I started running I used to get side stitches -- you'll know what they are soon if not already. Like a cramp in your gut. These go away during a run if you keep moving and breathing well and eventually you won't even feel "shitty" when you jog.

Don't be afraid to take rest days. Maybe jog 2 consecutive days and take the third off, then repeat, or something. Even jogging 3 or 4 days a week is a nice way to ease into it if your joints or muscles cry for relief.

STRETCH before and after every jog! Not extreme and painful shit, just a nice prolonged stretch of your calves, quads, torso, etc... A lot of people skip the cool down stretch afterwards but it's important.

I like running through neighborhoods or around campus but everyone is different. Maybe you'll enjoy that, or maybe you'll prefer using a treadmill at the gym. You might like to listen to music with headphones or maybe just be alone with your thoughts. Feel free to experiment.

Also, don't be so focused on a rigid schedule that you "miss" workouts because of inconvenience or something. If I find myself feeling energetic at a given time, I just get up and work out. Maybe a morning one day and then evening the next. Maybe midnight (I'm in college and can get away with that, haha). It's better to exercise when you feel good than to skip it because of an artificial time restriction or being full after a meal or something.

Those are just some random bits of advice.

And by the way, running outside at night or in a gym when it's not crowded might help you not be self-conscious. Don't feel like you've got to shake your junk in front of rush hour traffic or the after work gym crowd. I fucking hate congested running settings, personally.

Thanks for the tips!

& regarding where I am fitness wise... the BMI says I am 3.4 over the normal weight. So that is about... 10-20 pounds that I need to drop?

And does the time of day matter for jogging? As in... Jogging in the morning and eating throughout the day, or jogging in the evening/mid-evening and not eating at all? Because I don't eat past 6 PM. I don't know how howta explain!

That's really not that overweight--why would you be so paranoid about people seeing you run?

Dunno, really. It's so much better to jog anytime than not to, so just remember that. You'll have to see what agrees with you personally. Like I said above, listen to your body and don't force yourself to always jog if you feel like crap or you're sleepy or hungry or whatever.

I prefer running outside and mornings "feel" fresher because the air is generally more clean and still, but evenings are nice too assuming traffic has died down. I don't understand the appeal of people running along busy roads and through monstrous intersections at 5:30 pm, but more power to them for running at all, haha.

I also like to run with a little bit of food in my system, but other people I know hate that and insist on running on an empty stomach. I can tell you that it feels great to collapse on a couch or in a chair after having run to exhaustion and then showered -- you're clean, worn out, and you can literally do anything without feeling the least bit sluggish or guilty. It's like "So what if I watch 4 hours of basketball? I just fucking wore myself out!" I like that, haha.

or just type underneath it to respond normally.

How overweight are you?

Give me height and weight, Jogging may hurt your joints if your obese. Start with walking and supplement it with weight lifting.

Read 7 habits of highly effective people book

As humans we're the only animals on the planet that can control the respond to stimulus effect. So you can control your reaction to events, stimulus, negative thoughts etc

Or as the guitar zen book said:
The instant a negative thought limiting yourself enters your mind, before even voicing it burn it from your thoughts.

Bruce Lee was said to use this to great effect. Every time a negative thought entered his mind he would visualize burning this thought as a piece of paper to a candle's flame.

Works for me quite well :)

I suggest getting some ankle weights. :)

But just for normal jogging?... Just get out and do it. What helps for a lot of people is keeping a day planner. Set time aside specifically for jogging every day or two.

Don't worry about people looking at you. Put a head set on, and put on a pair of sunglasses. If you have sunglasses on, people will be less likely to make eye contact. Just focus on what you're doing, and not what everyone else is thinking.

Not OP, but I heard that jogging on concrete is bad, esp if you overweight. This is my only option, though. Is there a type of running shoe I could get that would make it easier on my legs?

It's a little harder on your feet and ankles than dirt, but no jogging is "bad." Just get yourself some comfortable running shoes -- ask an employee for something good for road running.

If you're overweight, definitely start slower with maybe just walking or mixing in some easy jogging. You'll get used to the exertion within a couple weeks if you listen to your body and don't go too hard.

Also, consider swimming if you want a nice aerobic workout with minimal pressure on the joints.
