I use only water when I shower, except for on my face. I used to soap up my shoulders, and before that I never had any problems. During it I had breakouts, and eventually I stopped. It felt weird to stop, felt dirty for 2-3 showers, but I after that it felt fine to just use water and I stopped having breakouts almost completely. Soaking in a bath is a nice way to get clean, no crap from any product to deal with, just clean (hopefully) water soaking out and impurities and dead skin cells. Only problem is even just water can dry your skin/hair out if you're in a while.
As for face, I still use soap, and it dries my face out. I use a moistened paper towel after to wipe away dead/flaked skin cells and wet my face, and it stops being tight. I need something better to wash with, though =/
I try to use very little soap, and use it VERY gently, trying not to rub it in deep but just barely touch the surface and rinse well. I don't really have breakouts, but even that (like I said) dries my face out
You need a good balance. Not dry (of water or natural oil to hold in moisture), and not oily. Too far either way will give problems.
Also pay attention to the temperature of the water. Warm opens pores, and cold closes. For (longer) hair it's generally best to use cooler water and finish with a cold/cool rinse, so maybe that would help with skin too? I use the coolest I can comfortably stand, which is easier if the room is warmer and/or you are colder.
Anyone have suggestions for a good (non-drying) face wash?
