/fit/ I have a real problem with stress, it doesn't take a lot to piss me off but once I'm annoyed it takes me a long time to calm down. I never get violent but I do feel the urge to tear people into strips then it just descends into a migraine and rapid heartbeat. After that I practically pass out and lose all energy. As you can imagine, this isn't exactly a good thing and stress is really starting to build as I see more frustrating people over the summer. I need to fix this somehow and I'm guessing it will lower my blood pressure (I don't know what it was but it was so high my doctor took it another 2 times just to make sure it was being read right). I'm willing to try anything so hit me with your best shot.

tl;dr how do I take control of stress before it takes control of me?

Think about it this way - every time you get pissed at someone, you're giving them power over you. They control you by getting you angry and making you incapable of doing much else. Ask yourself "is this smacktard really worth my time & energy?"

Another thing to do is to reduce the forms of stress in your life as much as possible. Exercise is a good start. I added to that starting my own company so I'm the boss, keeping my apartment clean so I never come home to a pigsty, cancelling my home internet & TV so that I can focus on doing stuff that makes me feel good about myself like learning to play the guitar, cooking, reading more books, and so on. It has helped me to feel more in charge, more "ahead of the game", and yes, even a little superior to the shitheads that try to piss me off.

Weed & booze are loser suggestions - sure, they'll mellow you out. But eventually you'll wake up a decade older having spent all your money on drugs and all your problems will still be there. Fix your problems first. Then IF you choose to have a toke it'll be that much more fun because you're not running from your life, you're enhancing it.

I used to be exactly the same way as you, and on the rare occasion that I do get angry (maybe once a year) it still takes me a good 2 hours to calm down and another 4 to stop obsessing over how fucking stupid the whole thing was. The worst is if it happens at a party because then I get no sleep at all.

At least I can channel it into angry sex with my submissives.

Thanks a lot Dan, we seem like pretty similar people and the whole "this person isn't better than me so why am I giving them the chance?" thing will probably work. May take a few days of bruised knuckles and naps but I think I'll get there eventually. My room is very untidy, maybe I should clear that up too?

The only things I don't think I could do are cancelling my TV & internet, I really should though because the internet has pretty much consumed my life.

Your quick anger is from pent up stress/frustration thats not getting out. Meditating is a great way to let go of that stress and such.

If you find it impossible to meditate, go hit up some new age store. They have some hokey music CDs that actually do work to calm your brain down. (Ironically evangelist churches use similar music to mind control their congregation.) There is really is a science behind using sound to manipulate brain wave patterns.

Meditation is also a great time for you to give yourself positive thoughts "Like I am a calm person." Seriously this shit works, its like hypnotic suggestion. Only thing is is you are doing it to yourself, so you can choose what you want. Just make sure everything is phrased in the positive, and avoid negations like don't, not, no...etc. If you say I don't want ice cream, your brain deletes the no, and fuck do you want ice cream.

I can see how hypnotic suggestion might work. Just avoid taking meditation, or any of that eastern shit too seriously. Or else you will become a faggot.

Meditation works pretty good. You don't have to do some silly asian mantras, I just repeat "Relax" to myself over and over. Try to clear your mind and only focus on hearing "relax". To prevent your mind from visually wandering, you can also picture the words, like see the text. It might take a while the first few times, but eventually you learn to relax almost on cue.

Follow up (I had to go to meet a new client):

It took me ages to learn that anger stems from fear and to honestly ask myself what I was afraid of. 95% of the time the answer is inadequacy. I'd come home from a crappy job to shit-hole of an apartment with dishes stacked up, crud all over the bathroom, and decor that looked like I just moved in - and I'd lived there for three years! I'd make a bullshit unbalanced dinner and waste the night blasted in front of the idiot box. Enough was enough.

I sold my tv and got a projector so I could only watch on rainy days and after sun-down. I cancelled my tv coz the only good stuff is online, anyways. I gave away all the clothes I owned that didn't really fit or were more than 5 years old or that just looked like shit. I traded a few ugly pieces of furniture for stuff that would look good in my place.

Over the next 6 months I ran around in the same two pairs of pants and 1 pair of shoes while I saved my money and learned to cook better food. I discovered I had allergies that didn't kill me but affected my mood, so I stopped consuming milk. Slowly, as I could afford it, I started buying Ikea and nice threads and a stereo system and feeling really pimp about my life. I got a gym membership and started reading stronglifts.com. I started practicing how to talk to total strangers on the bus so I could be relaxed when I hit on a girl I liked. I went to job interviews I didn't need just to practice my interview skills. I joined collarme.com to find a girl that enjoyed having me in charge.

These days the only thing that stresses me out is when the government asks for back-taxes, or my stock portfolio goes down. (Bring the boys home from war? if it increases the dividends from my investments then I'm all for it!) The only time I still get angry is if someone disrespects me. Fortunately, those people are the people I *used to be*, so putting them in their place is easy peasy.

If my name was Dan we'd be the same person. I've started avoided my girlfriend because I'm scared of treating her bad enough that she starts looking elsewhere and we don't talk about our problems (which then builds up). I want to be seen as a great guy but I'm nowhere near and I can't even have anyone over (only one painted wall in my room, bathroom with dirty walls, etc) and that limits my possibilities to vent even more.

Maybe I should go your route and start over, I'm sure it couldn't hurt?
