sup /fit/,

I know you've probably gotten a billion of these questions, but this one is quick.

I'm finally starting to take myself seriously as far as physical fitness goes, I'm jogging, and that's going great. but I'm also starting to do push-ups. Like most people just starting to do pushups, yeah- shit is hard.

When talking to my friend, he suggested doing them in sets, 25 here, 25 there, and work my way up to doing more at the same time. Is there any dis-advantage of splitting them up? Also, for kicks, how many pushups does /fit/ do on a daily baiss? right now I'm doing 4 sets of 25 each day, totaling 100.

You're supposed to do everything in sets, or at least, that's how i do it so as far as i know, no disadvantages as it helps you get your reps. I personally just do 3 sets of 25. You wanna just have a short break in between them by the way

I usually do about 35-40 ring push-ups for a warm-up

My bench press is terrible compared to my other lifts (and what I mean by terrible is that my overhead press is almost the same as my bench for some freak reason) which is why I do a lot of ring push ups, other than that I don't do push-ups very often

How long is too long, just out of curiosity?

break wise? over 10 minute breaks, at the most you want to rest 5 minutes between. This will lower the amount of reps when you start out, but it works you harder

Alright, makes sense. Thanks anon.

Increase amount of push-ups every few days by 5. Once you hit about 50 mix them with diamond push-ups (they are way harder at start so it's ok if you do 2 sets of 50 normal and 2 sets of 10 diamond).
Doing one exercise all the time trains muscles at doing that single exercise instead of just increasing their strength - after some time of course. It's not like getting from 3 pussy half-push-ups to 100 doesn't increase strength, it just becomes less and less effective. Mixing in some variants helps to avoid using technique instead of strength.
>how many pushups
1 set of 100 normal or 1 set of 50 diamond push-ups usually.
When I have much free time and I'm not tired I do 2-4 sets each.

I do 5 sets of 40 explosive reps of wide-hands pushups and 10 sets of 40 reps of hands-at-waist-level pushups.

Instead of doing all 100 in 1 set, breaking it into a few sets is better. Muscle grows during rests, not during the exercise itself.

And regarding rest periods between sets, http://www.protraineronline.com/past/oct15/restperiods.cfm

just to be clear: muscle grows during the 48 hours after your workout, not the 2-3 minutes of rest between each set

Does anyone do pushups everyday?
Most people are taught to do them every other day.
pros/cons of doing them daily?

Fat man pullups is the best choice

You guys are doing 100 push-ups?

Thats pretty crazy, I mean, I'm working out at the gym like 4 times a week, 3 times working out chest and I'm benching about 230 lbs but I can't do more than like 35 push-ups... I just don't get why

I'm curious, has anybody read the tips for effective abs workout? He's saying that crunches, sit-ups and cardio is not effective to get a sixpack..

When you bench, I bet you do 3-10 reps with each set. You're building muscle size (not necessarily strength) and you're not improving your muscular endurance.

You need to keep your muscles activated for extended periods of time to build endurance.

Quick, powerful movements (like plyometric pushups) are best for actually building strength and power.

Yup, I'm doing three sets with about 10 repetitions.

What I assumed was that if I get better in benching, I would automatically be able to do more push-ups, but you are absolutely right with what you said.

I think my muscles are trained for maximum power in a short time period instead of enduring power.

those are isolation exercises. diet is important though...but exercise wise you want to do compound movements that really work them in the same way you would work any other muscle. use lower reps and compound movements. dont do 1000 crunches, do 12 roman chair situps with a plate on your chest.
