Ask a lean guy anything about fitness/dieting Anonymous
OK guys, I'm here to answer any general questions regarding fitness/dieting or whatever that anyone may have. I realize some people may not like my physique and want to flame me for being too thin because they think anyone under 225 lbs is an Ethiopian, but I don't give a shit. This is for those that happen to like how I look and want to attain a similar body. Some things I'll say off the bat is that I'm 6'3", 175 lbs and have been working since jan 07' to get to this shape from about 230 lbs. No steroids were involved. I'm not genetically geared towards being lean and was always a fat kid. Ask away.

Rest day? yes or no.

Cardio how often to get a decent BF%?

Strength training, do I have to lift a lot and eat a lot to gain muscle? Should I focus on protein rich foods to keep my fat low while also repairing muscle?

Vegetables, meats (non red), dairy, some fruits and very dew carbs is a good mix for a healthy diet?

Did you ever consult a trainer at a gym or a nutritionist just to make sure you were on a safe system?

Do you use protein powders at all? are they safe and are all they really are is protein in powder form? which do you recommend?

>Second...im a fatfuck...what motivated you?

Honestly my motivation started when i was younger and I simply did it because I wanted to be attractive to the women. I was sick of being chubby. When you're young I guess girls are as motivating as anything. I'm no stranger to the gym, It's just that it took me a hwile to buckle down and read into some actual science about fat loss/muscle gain instead of following crap in roid head magazines that don;t apply to the average person. Right now my motivation isn't only being attractive to the opposite sex, I'm into acting and want to try my hand at modeling if I can. I think more than that though it's about conquering a part of myself and knowing that there's one thing in life that I actually can say I put much time and thought and sweat into.

ok GET access to weights, get a solid beginners bulking weight training routine... I'd recommend reading up at www.bodyrecomposition.com. Muscle weight comes from added calories mainly in the form of protein to fuel the muscle growth. Honestly if you have issues putting ON weight there is no other option than simply eat more but eat more of the right stuff, not just junk.

Right now I'm still dieting trying to get insanely ripped (I'm talking competition level bf%) so I'm only doing 2 full body weight training workouts a week and jogging/walking 4 days a week on off days, I rest usually the day before my weight training.

Cardio amounts depend ont he person, some people can get away with very little ,some need a lot, I personally just do about an hours worth 4 days a week.

My diet right now in all honesty consists of only meat, egg whites, limited amounts of fat free cottage cheese, pickels/lettuce, EFA oil, protein powder on my dieting days. All protein powder is is , well, powdered proteins so yes its safe. I don;t have a favorite brand, whatever is cheapest to be honest and has the least carbs per serving. I also ingest very little if any impact carbs during dieting days. I have full days where I carb load to raise hormone levels back up.

never consulted anyone personally about training, everything I learned was from reading myself online.

Half and half, I was 250 lbs around 2004 after bulking up from 165 in 02'. I just basically let myself go a bit up till Jan 07' because I got way too involved in playing world of warcraft . Eat more often in smaller amounts. That will get your body to use up the energy faster since it has a constant influx of fuel. Other then that your metabolism is dictated on how much your body needs to sustain your weight (muscle requires more than fat) and your activity level.

Well youre replacing one bad thing with equally bad things (soda for milk and tea). Tea is probably loaded with sugar, if not and you are brave enough to drink the shit plain, then more power to you. Milk is filled with lactose -- sugar. Anything ending in 'ose is sugar as far as I know.

Honestly if you are trutly dedicated, eat nothing but lean meat, egg whites, pure protein powders, limited amounts of fat free cottage cheese. Drop carbs. I know "experts" have dissed the atkins thing, but science says otherwise. It's proven that your body is simply more efficient in using fats for fuel while in a low carb state. As for fats, you need them or you'll die, and should be in the form of EFA oil.

>My second one is what is good for just dropping weight from your stomach? Im okay in the muscle sector but Im fat. I hope joining the boxing team will help me lose weight too.

Nothing, it's impossible to spot reduce fat outside of surgery. Deep massage however has been shown to possibly add some benefit as it can break the fat cell open and allow the triglycerides into the bloodtream and they will be used for fuel. So i guess if you want to sit around squeezing your stomach fat before a cardio session, go for it.

if you're still a newbie to the game you could probably get the acclaimed noob gains and lean out and gain muscle all at once if your diet is good. if you just want to directly shred fat though, it all comes through eating the right foods (check for a list in some above replies), eating less food, practically no carbs most days of the week, expnding more calories than you take in, and carb loading periodically to maintain muscle mass and raise hormone levels.

What i do is diet for 3 days, do my cardio, then the next day i will do a moderate volume full body workout and eat an ass load of carbohydrates that day. What a carb load does is raise hormone levels associated with your metabolism and can create an anabolic environment to stave off muslce loss through dieting. If you dont have a plan to keep your muscle while you diet, unless yorue geneticlaly gifted, you will end up just getting smaller. Youll lose fat yes, but muscle tone as well and youll look crappy. As for carb intake on those carb load days I'd say take in about 6 grams of carbs per lb. of lean bodyweight. Keep fats LOW.
>> Anonymous
>>301699
So you want to build strength.

The key to being 'toned' or rather, having definition is to either be lifting constantly so your muscles are always pumped up, or to have dense (this is where the building strength part comes in) muscle fiber and low fat.

The sustainable way is the latter. Your muscles will feel like steel, and you'll weigh about 20-40 pounds more but you'll still look as thing as before.

>hmm interesting OP thanks, and no im not a newb just curios :P

Keep in mind there's also water retention you have to take into account, also how much shit and piss is inside you when you take weight and food, etc etc. If you're positive it's none of that then you need to dial in on what's going on with your body. is your strength going up? if so chances are youre putting on muscle. However you may also be putting on fat too in that case as it's impossible to put on muscle and lose fat at the exact same period of time, not to be confused with a time "frame" in which it's possible in hindsight to both gain mass and lose fat when you look at the big pictue say over 2 weeks or months. If you're sure it's not muscle gain and positive it's fat gain, your diet needs to be corrected.
>> YoungBuck

>atm im not dieting since i dont believe dieting works,

Thing is about dieting, that one person's diet is another person's lifestyle. What I mean by that is, dieting does in fact work, but it will only be a short term fix IF you keep it as a diet. Turn it into your regular way of eating for your desired results, it's no longer a diet, it then just becomes the way you eat. You have to start somewhere. The only way you can get in shape as an overweight person wighout dieting is increasing activity to crazy levels where you can get away with eating like you do currently and still manage to shred fat. Most people don't have the time or desire for that though and simply need to start a diet that will hopefully turn into a regular healthy way of eating.

wow thanks for the detailed response. i copied the entire thing down to follow through with.

My process has been going on for a few years with a lot of trial and error. I've recently turned 20, but started working out @ 17. Being dumb back then, I did nothing but excess cardio and under-eat lol.

I've slowly changed into a better (healthier) lifestyle of just eating clean, 5-6 small meals a day, lifting, moderate cardio, etc.

Anyway, one of the big things I see you've pointed out is manipulating when to have carbs. My carbs come from veggies/fruits, oats, sweet potatoes, and lentils.

My question is: cut out all of that, or can I keep the veggies and fruits? The rest of my nutrition is made up of lean meats, egg whites, EFA's...and...that's it lol. (unfortunately, I stay away from protein powder b/c it gives me skin breakouts).

Next question: your second paragraph (see quote above), is that a cycle you go through for a special occasion or something you do always to just stay very lean?

Thanks a lot.

Yeah you're setting yourself up for a trip to the hospital.

First, the 300 program was a ONE TIME ONLY workout that the cast members did as like a grand finale to their training. Some actually didn't even complete it. It's also based around the Crossfit ideal, which has caused more injuries than special forces military training.

Second, if you're just starting out, I doubt you're going to be running that kind of mileage. Depending on how fat you are, jogging might not be the best cardio as it'll kill your knees.

If you do nothing but cardio you're going to set yourself up for failure. If you don't regularly train the muscles then youre body is not going to want to keep them around and they will just be stripped off and youll be skinny yes, but no muscle tone.

I'm trying to get a low body fat % before I bulk up. Starting on Monday of this week, I've been jogging/walking for an hour every morning (probably about 2 miles? I run real slow and lack the endurance to keep up the pace I start with. Seem to getting closer to hitting my stride from the get-go, though.). Should I just focus on losing the body fat for now or should I take a day or 2 off to do some lifting, even though that would require me getting a gym membership?

For the record, I'm 5'10" or so, 125lbs, ~11%bf. Was going to drop 10lbs before I started going for bulking up at all. Can get pics if you so desire to show you my body type.

To be honest, I figured as much, with the 300 program. But I think I can handle the jogging, even though I'm running with my roommate who is a marine back from a summer of physical training. I've always been a good runner.

So what would you suggest as a solid muscle building program that won't give me a heart attack? I plan on sticking with the program, building intensity until I am happy with my fitness and muscle tone and then continuing to train at that intensity. Any links with clear guidelines and plans?

well depending on how lean you are, you may want to consider cutting out carbs entirely. The leaner you get the more youll have to cut. Otherwise I'd stay around no more than 50 grams daily if you're serious about direct fat loss.most vegs and all fruits have carbs so....

yeah it's basically a cyclical ketogenic diet, and I do it for fat loss specifically. I imagine you could do a perpetual never ending cycle of it to stay at a constant shape if you add in more calories and carbs.

Well if youre not training your muscles with wights regularly, or eating enough protein, your body won't hold on to them so you'll just end up being smaller but witht he same average muscle tone.

>For the record, I'm 5'10" or so, 125lbs, ~11%bf. Was going to drop 10lbs before I started going for bulking up at all. Can get pics if you so desire to show you my body type.

If someone is into this to look "good" I'd recommend bulking only until your bottom 4 abs go bye bye. At that point, it's time to lean out again, hopefully efficiently enough that you get to a good bodyfat% while keeping most of the muscle you put on.

Well, I'm eating more protein than usual. Peanut butter toast, chicken, etc. I look at my weight, but I'm really looking more at the total loss in my torso for when to finally go for the gym membership.

But what I'm getting from this is that I should probably go ahead and shell out the money for the gym membership and spend at least 1-2 days a week there? It's really not a problem financially, I'm just a jew about spending money.

Also, since the gym I'll probably be joining (it's close enough for me to jog there, work out, jog back, so I figure it's a good choice) has an olympic sized pool, should I maybe opt into swimming over running? What are pros of doing that? Better on your knees, right?

if you go to fitday.com they have caloric averages for pretty much every item of food.

As for home made meals well you have to count the calories of everything that goes into it basically.

each gram of protein has 4 calories, each carb has 4 and each fat has 9.

Swimming is good if you can actually swim well enough to even get a benefit from it, simply doggy paddling around for a while won't match up with a good jog.

Yes id definitely join the gym and start pushing weight around now if you can, sooner the better always with weights. If you're a true beginner I'd look at doing somewhere around 3 days a week there just full body type workouts, you'll find more details in those sites I listed.

If you can't swim, don't swim. I'm not embarassed to ask for help and tips from people. My only problem is that I don't want them to get really fucking annoyed at me for asking too many questions.

Would a runner do that? It depends on how quick a learner you are. I was on swim team and some of those JV kids couldn't learn if you fucking moved their arms for them. The average person is somewhere between 14 and 16 calories per pound. If you think you have a slow metabolism, go 14. Women usually should go 14. the diet part of the whole puzzle is mainly low/no carbs for 3 days, at least one gram of protein per lb of body weight, lot of water, a tablespoon of EFA oil. Pickles, protein powders, lettuce, egg whites. Every 4th day I eat an ass load of carbs, moderate protein and very low fat and get in a full body weight training workout with 3 sets per muscle group at about 6-8 reps.

MOST people serious about bulking-- pros or wannabe pros in particular--stray heavily from cardio due to its catabolic effects on muscle. If they are doing cardio, they are not running or jogging, theyre on a bike or elliptical for very short periods of time. The pre contest cardio is in no way anywhere close to the intensity of a jogger's pace. It's super low impact steady state low intensity for prolonged periods of time. You cant cut carbs and do shorter sessions with higher intnsity and not lose msucle that they pay thousands of dollars to put on to begin with. That's simply not how the game works.

And going more in depth to the steroids game, it's no secret that all aspiring pros or the pros themselves take a shitload of gear and if you think in the offseason while these guys are bulking up they--as waterlogged baloons with a load of strain on their cardio systems- can seriously jog a mile straight then I think you're delusional.

um, yes it does. fitness is not defined as you think it is. it is task specific. fitness for a powerlifter is in fact being able to get through a competition at peak output, it has nothing to do with being able to run a marathon. stop redefining words to suit your stupid fucking world view. fitness does not necessarily mean cardio-vascular endurance you cocksucker.

you certainly have 'low body fat' and 'dialing in diet to achieve this look' as well as keeping 'h20' in check.

fitness is task specific

and i dont have a problem with you, just with commentary on achieving what is FAR more difficult than what you have.

almost no body fat WHILE MAINTAINING muscle mass.

and before you start bitching. i finished up earlier this month working with a collegue who had prepped to do just that in a natural BB competition. did fantastic till about 5%, then it was as much muscle as fat to make his weight class.

you and bodybuilders are different. your experience, and YOUR excuses (juice) to why YOU cant do it are your own, dont make them seem factual to your crowd of impressionable fanboys. this is not a vent at you, but you realize the mentality this sets?

"anything i cant do must only be able to be done on steroids"

see the above part of this post. the crossfit guys have a tendancy to define everything from their own centre of the universe, in order to be in the centre of the universe. ever heard the term crossfit nazi? this is one of the reasons they get called it.

OP has a nice body. Post face. That's what makes it or breaks it for me. I'd take a normal(skinny/fit/norm/etc) guy with a cute face over an ugly face with a crazy good body.

You're being a scientologist nazi right now, exercise science recognizes all the particular components of physical activity, not just being really fucking good at one. If you're an athlete (which obviously no one here is), then you have a sport specific reason to not train the other aspects. If you just admit you have a preference for one type of training, no one gives a shit. But the real exercise nazis are the ones that throw slander on other styles of training that's not their own style (especially shit like with Crossfit, which btw, I never see them going around to other boards trying to preach or convert, they just seem to be a an easy scapegoat).

But powerlifting is so much better for basically any sport, except something silly like marathon running.

I man, I play basketball, and I would rather become more explosive and strong as fuck

this thread has become philosophical proof why one can never be wrong in an arguement of facts and opinions, especially when those who use opinions can never be made to see that realization by those who use facts.

/thread dead, if those who remain in contention simply argue by 'feelings' vs. reality

and LOL to the crossfit knocks, but we all drink our own kool-aid in the end....but at least i my lifts and i look like it...more than somebody who has been running "Linda" in 18:43. but rings and muscleups are still great. here's a related pic from that big buttfucking in the desert, the cross fit games, just to make you all happy again.

to each his own, as long as its something

K OP I'd kill for that stomach. I'm amazingly skinny all over and can't get fat for no reason (even though I eat a-fucking-lot) though I've got a huge beer belly. How'd I lose it? No need to talk about other parts beefing up, just the belly.

Then workout your abdominal muscles, and lower your body fat percentage. ENjoy being a skinny fuck.

Fish oil, 4 cups of green tea a day, 6 meals a day, lean protein with every meal, HIIT and compound weight training.

Youll be ripped in no time.

I'm a huge fitness noob, so what are the exact things that I need to do? Like situps or what?
>> Anonymous
>>302436
To lower your body fat percentage you need to do cardio. High Intensity Interval Training. Incorporate strength training. Eat HEALTHY foods. Do this until you are fit. Start reading about fitness until you know what to do. Then write down a plan in a notebook and use this to track all progress. Weigh yourself once a week. Track how many repetitions you do of whatever weight. Be sure to do stretching. Blah blah blah etc.

I've just restarted after about 3 months of slacking and my new gym teachers insists on doing circuits(working every muscle group lightly at every session) for like 1 month before starting to work on muscle groups.
Is he right because I for one never heard of this circuit thingy?

This is true.
I know a fat guy that runs track.
SHIT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.
He'd be the prime example of how it *can* just be genetics.
Except he is a healthy as all fuck.
He is like a powerlifter (in the lack of cutting) of the swimming and running world.

Some things I'll say off the bat is that I'm 6'3", 175 lbs and have been working since jan 41' to get to this shape from about 230 lbs. No steroids were involved. I'm not genetically geared towards being lean and was always a fat kid. Ask away.

I'm about 187 LBS and 6 foot tall. I recently started working out, and have noticed considerable muscle development in areas that aren't totally covered by fat. How do you suggest I go about burning off the fat? I realise that building muscle/burning fat at the same time is hard, but as you said I'm a newbie to this so it should work ok for me. Once I have my desired muscles I will put my all into burning fat?

How do you suggest I do both these things?
Currently I do a 3 day split of chest/legs/back-shoulders, and do cardio directly after the workout. I also do HIIT 3 times a week

Thanks in advance

hi, i am taking over this thread and will answer all questions regarding getting fit/gaining muscle.

>>302543

you're on the right track, but don't neglect arms. do some dips on your chest day. and i don't recommend doing both cardio and HIIT, pick one which you like the most and do that on rest days.

regarding putting all your effort into burning fat: don't do it. you'll lose some muscle if you do cardio/HIIT without lifting. i wouldn't go beyond switching to a lighter weightlifting routine.

Regular cheerios, not Honey Nut Cheerios.

I know their oats, but would they be too processed or anything? (It says whole grain oats on the package, though.)
