What are your thoughts about alcohol while getting in shape?

I'm pretty dependent on alcohol for getting to sleep. I usually drink rum and juice (too much sugar!) or light beer (too many carbs!). Should I try to cut alcohol out altogether or search for a low-cal alternative. What do I do with my leisure time if I'm not drinking?
>> Anonymous
cut alcohol all together. go find out how many calories are in a shot of vodka, or a beer.

diet + alcohol doesnt work.
>> Anonymous
yes, alcohol is a bad habit. drop it.
read a book instead.

Marijuana is a sleep aid as well. Healthier and safer.

Actually I would much rather smoke weed than drink. I don't know about a sleep aid but if you have to pick, take the pot.
>> Anonymous
yeah man smoke weed instead

I could cite just as many studies that show that weed is actually just as bad as regular smoking and like any other drug affects your brain negatively.
Knowing some stoners I can confirm this on my own, cause they are stupid like bread.

It may be but no hangover, no calories from beer, can't be physically addicted to it like alcohol and nicotine. Wins in every way for me.

>>134728
Only physiologically addicting to some and severe depression for all long time users. Total win!

I've known 1 person my whole life who was mentally addicted to pot and she went through rehab and is now fine. Even people who smoked 3 or 4 nights a week aren't. It's rare that someone gets mentally addicted and it usually comes along with depression. Pot does not make you depressed, it's the kind of people that smoke that have that kind of life anyway.
I've seen what alcohol can do to a person and a family, I stay away from it. My dads best friend literally drunk himself to death over a few years and died the day before his 50th birthday.

Can't we just agree that drug users of any kind are weak-willed jelly on two legs?

fix'd. Big fuck difference between doing any drug more than like 2-3 times a week, and having experimented with a few throughout your lifespan, and having a favorite like marijuanna or alcohol you have once every so often. And a daly small amount of alcohol (approx. 2 servings, preferably red wine, but not necessarily) is actually recommended

Anyway, melatonin or tryptophan > weed or booze for sleep aid. Doesn't work as quickly, but it's a lot better for you.

And anyone who thinks that consistent usage of marijuanna isn't a bad thing, hang out with some pothead friends you're sober and they're sober, it's fucking pathetic seeing how much residual effect it has.

They are bad, i have been going ton the gym for more than two years and i went from 25% bodyfat to 15%. If i hadn't drank so much, i should look as fit as Tom Venuto but i just look nice now.
On the other hand, i love drinking more than fitness and i'm quite happy to see you can look well even if you are a "power-drinker" (getting wasted twice or thrice a week) with lots of work. Just don't try to become Ronnie Coleman, you will never be able to achieve perfection if you drink a lot.

Because acendotal evidence trumps all, right? I do hangout with a bunch of "potheads" on a regular basis, and even when not high they're some of the most fun people to be around.

It really annoys me when people use stereotypes to judge everyone who uses cannabis. Seriously, we're not all moronic, catatonic losers with no job and a blunted personality.

i drink a lot too and am in great shape.

Dark beer although it has carbs, they are complex. And it's full of anti oxidants. Besides dark beer taste better than most other lighter beers.

I'm using _consistent_ anecdotal evidence, and accounts from many other people I know. Of course there's fucking exceptions you twit. And why did you put potheads in quotes? Are they not necessarily potheads? they only smoke a few times a week, don't let it interfere with their lives? If that's the case, guess what!?!!?! They're not potheads! They're responsible users.

I'm talking about the fuckheads that smoke every day, multiple times a day, despite whatever else they have to do that day. They may or may not have good jobs, and fairly functional just because their tolerance is so high, but the fact is, their recollection is severely affected for a long time after they quit (something around 30 days peak, but some evidence suggests that that memory portion of the brain is negatively affected, possibly in an atrophy-like way, by long-term heavy use), they're impossible to rely on while they're high (which is pretty often), and there's a huge 1-5 year gap in their life where much of what they did revolved around this crutch.

I honestly don't give a fuck if your magical friends can manage themselves if they do happen to fit the profile, that will never change the fact that the stereotype came from *somewhere*, and I've seen many times with my own eyes in a large number of people I knew growing up go from normal or intelligent to medicated mental patient for a while because they can't handle life or peer pressure, then make a steady comeback to reality after they bounce back and forth to and from sobriety.

Jesus, there's no need to be such as asshole about it. You should define what a pothead is before you blow up with your self-righteous rant about extremely heavy users. That's why I put it in quotes. To some, one who smokes three times a week is a pothead. To others one who smokes three times a month is a pothead. Out of the dozens of people I know who use cannabis, the number that use it all day every day like you described I could count on one hand. In my experience you would have to use it that much to see any of the residual effects that you speak of, and you have to take in to account the fact that that's a very , VERY large amount used chronically. Too much of anything is bad for you.

You said "consistent usage". Once a week is consistent usage, and it's going to do fuck all to my psyche.

Should've clued you in to what I consider abuse.

I grew up in a pretty shit town, so generally, those that would consider themselves potheads were the ones I described, my mistake for assuming that was a universal definition. Out of those I knew that smoked responsibly vs being psychologically dependant on it, the ratio was depressingly learning towards the dependant, since they all seemed to know each other and support each other's dependence. A lot of people I've talked to across the country seem to agree with this pattern, at least at a certain high-risk age range.

Even the supposedly responsible ones get on my nerves sometimes, since I have to work with them, and their performance *seems* to be markedly lower in some regards, though I supposed there's no way to accurately measure this, and some of them seem to think it's OK to smoke before work or on their break every so often because they think it makes them work better, it's intolerable having to compensate for their mistakes and shortcomings.

I'm a bit biased yes, but generally I play the devil's advocate disproportionately to how I actually feel on the subject because I'm tired of people pretending that pot is nothing to be concerned by any means, and the main naysayers are bible thumpers or similarly minded people that are easy to phase out, so a lot of people will remain oblivious to the abuse potential, assuming that all the negatives are just propaganda from cotton and lumber lobbied politicians.

dear OP, i would not recommend drinking while trying to get in shape. And not simply because of the fact it is harmful to your liver. Alcohol lowers and even halts testosterone production. I imagine someone like you who drinks nightly has slowed their testosterone to a crawl. You may be thinking, "that's fine, I don't want to get huge, I just want to lose some fat". Well guess what, testosterone is one of the best tools for fat loss. Why do you think most roid monkeys look so cut? Furthermore, alcohol kills the villi and microvilli that line your small intestine and are responsible for absorbing important nutrients like iron and b vitamins. Not to mention is reduces liver glycogen by approx. 40%, which is your body's source of energy. How are you supposed to work out if you don't have the energy to do it?

If you are really having trouble sleeping, try taking 5g melatonin with some valerian root and protein an hour before bed. Want more? Take GABA.

Good Luck

that is a common myth. While marijuana may help someone fall alseep, they do not get a restful sleep. It decreases REM (rapid eye movement), which is the stage of sleep where the body recovers and you actually dream. To all of you who smoke to fall asleep, you're just shooting yourself in the foot.

well, i just love having a couple beers (http://www.everydaysystems.com/glassceiling/) a day if I have the time.

i will call (or get called by) some friends, hit the bar, have one beer or two, catch up and then go home. light dinner, and bed. no internets, no tv, no shit.

it seems to me the perfect way to end a day after work and gym. i'd like to get into wine, as it is supposedly better for you, but things are fine right now.

as much as i hate when these flame wars start, i'm pretty upset by how similar i am to most definitions of "pothead".

i think i might quit it for a while.

Eh, smoke from weed has virtually the same toxic properties as the smoke from normal cigarettes, so I don't know why there's so many misconceptions in this thread.

Weed is somewhat bad for the body over the long term. The only "good" thing about weed is that generally the average weed user doesn't end up dousing their lungs in as much as of the smoke as the average smoker.

Funny that this came up.

I have been working out consistently for a month now for the first time in 15 years. I have adjusted my meals down to 5-6 protein-rich mini-meals a day, and tonight I am giving up my nightly 2-3 glasses of red wine for the first time in 4 years.

Seriously, I have been drinking 2 glasses consistently every night (the same red) for that long...probably 1000 bottles in a row.

Not only is it the last big vice in my way to a better diet, its also going to save me ~$50 a week.

It was a tough decision. Wish me luck.
