I was wondering if you could help me /fit/.

I gained about 30 pounds (which is a lot since I only weighed 120 to start with) after a car wreck that fractured my pelvis at the left hip joint and fucked up my left ankle. It has since healed as best it's going to, but I'm having trouble losing the weight. This is partially because I have preclinical hypothyroidism, which means my body produces less thyroid hormones (which control metabolism) than average. The levels aren't low enough yet for my doctor to want to supplement them with artificial hormone, but my family history indicates that it's likely that someday I will have to.
Anyway my doctor put me on a strict diet and exercise routine. I'm having no problems with the diet, but the exercise is causing me a bit of stress. I don't have access to a gym, which doesn't leave me very many options. I don't mind walking/jogging around my neighborhood, but jogging on concrete puts a lot of stress on my old injury sites. What can you guys recommend? Is there anything I can do from my apartment, or should I stick to what I'm doing (walking around the city for 45-60 minutes a day)?
Also, I've noticed that about halfway through my route, my hands begin to noticeably swell up. They don't get huge, but they swell enough that the joints become stiff and uncomfortable, and I can't take my wedding ring off. I've been soaking them in cold water when I get home, which usually gets them back to about right. Is this common or should I call my doctor? (FWIW I live in eastern North Carolina. Maybe the heat and humidity are factors?)

I know this is TL;DR, sorry about that.

just do something low impact on the joints for your exercise (cycling, swimming)

never heard that your hands would swell from jogging, therefore you should obviously go see the doctor about this

My mom has hypothyroidism, and the swelling is just part of the symptoms. It mostly happens because of water retention. That's probably also why you gained so much weight after your accident as well.

I don't know why cycling never occurred to me. I've been meaning to get a new bike (I've had two stolen and a third run over by a Jeep in the 4 years I've lived in this city), so I will definitely look into that.
Swimming, as much as it's a stupid excuse, I'm just not ready to be in a bathing suit in public. I know it's stupid, but the weight gain, coupled with the scarring I have on my legs, has really made me not want to swim, even though I know it's good for me.

I hadn't even remembered that swelling was a symptom of hypothyroid. It's one of the symptoms I haven't really encountered prior to a few weeks ago, so it hadn't even occurred to me that that might be the cause.

Thanks guys.
