running will help your leg muscles grow...up to a certain point like most bodyweight exercises i.e pushups, bodyweight squats, pullups. unless you start increasing the intensity with which you run.
the goal of a long distance run is to strengthen your cardiovascular system, not for muscle gains. why don't you gain muscle you ask? well it's simply the nature of the exercise, youre teaching your body to sustain a certain speed for a long period of time and in order for your body to do that it'll have to optimize it's muscle size and heart rate.
if you compare sprinters and marathon runners, you'll see that sprinters are a lot more muscular because of the intensity at which they run. below is a pic of marathon runners.
