Hey /fit/ quick question, I am looking to lose around 50 lbs. I plan on lifting every other day and doing cardio on the rest days. Is this a good idea?

I've already started changing my diet completely. Stick to 3 meals a day strictly. Cut all soda and junk out.

im the 40 lbs in two months guy. when i started working out, i remembered hearing "if you're hungry, jsut eat!" and thats what i did. i had 4 smaller meals a day, eating until i was satisfied. doing otherwise will screw up your metabolism. feeling hungry is never a good thing. avoid the feeling.

totally agree, so long as you actually want the 5 meals and arent overfeeding

good luck. permanent, healthy weight loss is 1lb a week, and 2lb if you're really working hard and dieting right. Now factor in weight lifting (which does help lose body fat by burning calories) you will actually be seeing no weight loss on your weight scale. Infact, more weight might be added to it. Muscle weighs more than fat, which is why this would happen, but it's still psychologically discouraging if you're using a scale to judge your progress. You will still lose body fat by these methods fine, just avoid the weight scale and find out your body fat percentage and waist / chest / arm measurements and look at them every week to base progress.

both are truth. watch the weightlifting; that'll kill you're progress if you're looking to lose weight

Lifting = more muscles
more muscles = more energy need to maintain them
more energy expended = losing fat

weight lifting = major contributer to healthy fat loos

true, but hes looking to lose a lot of weight in 16 weeks. according to that one guys calculation, thats 32 pounds max. weightlifting wont help him lose that weight in a timely fashion.

Coupled with some hitt and a dietary change it can offset the 1lb of lean muscle loss that goes with the 2-3 lbs of fat loss during the cutting cycle, resulting in a more appealing physique when the weight is lost.
