The government doesn't take action because they encourage it.
Nation of consumers, right. For some time, calories were considered among the hardest things to increase consumer demand for.
So, we have the USDA, which is designed to service agribusiness and petrochemical companies, winning over common sense when it comes to calorie intake of eaters(something everyone has to do).
It's like a big win/win/win for everyone at the top. Food companies have people eating about 500 more calories a day than they did a few decades ago, easily. Petrochemical companies are getting windfalls of benefits from corn subsidies, and all the plastic and energy heavily processed foods require. Drug and health companies now have more opportunities for money because of fatness.
Why doesn't the government take action? People getting fatter grows the economy. Because, like war(which also generates economic growth), all growth is obviously for the good of the world.
