I started road biking this summer and I'm at the point now and take 25 miles rides with an avg. of 20 mph. I can do 100 miles day long rides, etc.. The point here is that I'm in decent shape with decent endurance but could stand to lose a little weight. (6'1" 187 lbs)

Recently I started doing interval training on the bike. I would ride as fast as I could for about 2 minutes, then rest for 5 minutes, then repeat for about seven cycles.

This really, really sucks the energy out of me. More than it should. For days afterwards I feel tired and my muscles hurt.

Does /fit/ think that I just need to eat a big pile of steak, or could this be some weird salt imbalance? What's going on here?

If you don't provide enough protein with your diet, yes, eat a steak.
You wreak your body, it needs protein for repair.

thanks

i'm still kinda new to biking. I thought a lack of protein would only make your muscles sore for longer. would it also account for the deep, deep feeling of general fatigue I had for days afterwards?

probably. Biking burns a lot of energy.
Eat more carbs, eat more protein.
And eat while you bike. The pros gulp bars and these power gels on the ride, nothing wrong with a sandwich or banana after 15 miles.

yeah I could probably eat some more. i took up biking to lose weight, it would be funny if I ended up heavier afterwards.

BMI is so lame
