I want to try building some endurance by taking walks with a heavy backpack. It's mostly because I probably wouldn't be using too much energy to be unable to listen to an audiobook while doing it, but also because I'll probably be drafted next year, and I hear that endurance is really important in the military. But before I try it, I have two questions:

-Does it work at all? I remember reading about the method before, but I don't really know anything about what results to expect.
-Any tips for making sure I don't damage my back in any way?

Pic kinda related.

Use a weighted vest instead of a backpack.

I don't know anything about benefits but make sure you use a good backpack with a properly sized waist belt that way your back won't carry the weight.

I would prefer to avoid buying new stuff.

Could you define "properly sized"?

Weighted vests and belts are not meant for running or walking. You are stupid, stop it.

they are meant for training of many sorts.

listen man: yes, wearing a weighted vest while walking will burn more calories because it is harder for your body to move that extra weight. You NEED to make sure you are not carrying it all on your back and be careful of destroying your shoulders if you do it way too much

Fuck this kind of training. Enjoy your compacted spine.

If you want to build endurance, do some 20 rep or 40 rep squats, pussy.

Good hiking backpacks, like my Osprey for instance, have different sized waist belts... get the proper fit and you can literally place 80-90% of the weight directly onto your hips.
