Shin splints, /fit/. How many of you have had them before? And how did you make them go away?

Occasionally over the last couple years, I've been experiencing anterior pain along my tibia that feels like it's extending down the bone, accompanied by a tightening of the surrounding muscle that eventually makes it too painful to walk on. I'm by no means overweight or inactive, which puzzles me because this usually happens when I'm walking to class or to work. I rarely go for runs because after a couple minutes, one leg or the other will immediate tense up, and the pressure only goes away if I stop and sit down (walking it off doesn't help).

I do a fair amount of walking each day (I'm also pretty much on my feet nonstop for a good 10 hours), use the elliptical for cardio, and my job often involves heavy lifting.

Any suggestions?
