Diet Sodas. Anonymous
While I almost never drink soda, I went to a restaurant today and we had entree coupons (you had to buy a beverage). It got me wondering...

Is all the crap in diet sodas really make it healthier than normal soda? Also, is Splenda really healthier than sugar (now I know sugar is just empty ass carbs, there's a lot of weird chemicals in Splenda that might make the extra calories from sugar worth it)?

Before all the pathos-based responses, I'll just let you know: it's not "healthy" in the sense of it being namely good. But it's not bad, because it's not really anything. Water is better, but damnit diet soda tastes good. Splenda passes straight through you, it's made to invoke no insulin response, and binds to nothing, doesn't get digested. Consider it the same as fiber, minus the benefits of fiber. It just goes through you.

That said, drink water, and Enjoy Diet Coke.

Diet soda is really good.
Don't get kidney stones though.
Water is more hydrating.
Carbonation can be bad for your teeth.
I drink too much diet soda.
But my teeth are bad.

There are quite a few sweeteners with low molecular weight, but the jury is still out on whether they have any negative effects.

You can cheat with them, but don't drink too much.

I went sodaless for like a year+ and then I had a soda...so weird...it felt very carbonated. Irrelevant, but it reminded me of this.

The Phosphoric Acid in the soda can cause teeth decay.
Artificial Sweeteners in the soda has shown in several (NON-CONCLUSIVE) studies that it can be linked to cancer and other forms of body harm.

To be honest, drink it.
It's not "healthy" but it's "healthIER" then regular soda.
All of the bad side-effects are almost completely causes under strict circumstances.

If you're constantly drinking it, obviously it's bound to build up - But that's assuming you're not getting any other nutrients or any other substances that can wash out any of the bad. (Such as water, vitamins, etc.. )

What I'm saying is this - Moderation.
(Dare I say) 1 soda per 3 days at minimum is alright.
Hell, even more if you drink and eat healthy.

From personal experience, I say, it's not as bad as a lot of people on this board put it out to be.

>The Phosphoric Acid in the soda can cause teeth decay.

Yeah, when a tooth is left sitting in soda for a long period of time. The acidic effect can be negated by drinking a sip of water or just running your tongue over your teeth a few times and letting saliva do it.

I stated that it's completely circumstantial to whether any tooth decaying substance can actually cause tooth decay. If you're never brushing your teeth, then yes, it's going to rot your teeth a lot faster. If you're drink water or have a meal with a side of your soda, it can almost have little to no effect.

Moderation is key.

Let me tell you this. If you drink that stuff properly, like only have it while you're eating and wash your mouth out with water afterwards and use a straw and don't clean your teeth immediately after, then you will be fine. I had only a film of enamel left on my teeth after drinking it wrong and it has not worsened despite my nigh-comical overconsumption.

If you suck it over your teeth, drink it while your mouth is dry, and sip it over a period of time instead of drinking it quick, or swill it in your mouth, and never drink water after, it will rape your teeth mercilessly. Your enamel will be destroyed incredibly fast. Your front teeth will literally be eroded down. If you do this and grind your teeth, your teeth will end up ground down by entire millimetres within months. Do you know why construction workers have massive dental problems? Drinking soft drinks while working.

Also, I doubt there are any actually harmful chemicals in it, or at least in Pepsi Max. For three years at school I would drink a 1.25 litre bottle a day, and for the last two years it's been 4-6 cans a day and more on occasion. Frankly, if it was damaging in the slightest, I would be dead now.

Diet sodas are fucking fine. Regular sodas have every Goddamn thing that diet sodas have in them, except the diet ones have no nasty sugar and no calories (or a small amount that's negligible).
