What do you guys think of the Atkins diet?

I've looked over the whole diet concept and read the guys book and it seems ok to me, of course the book won't have highlighted any negatives... are there any? / horror stories that should make me avoid it?

opinions andcomments much welcomed.

well no i don't, how does eating a low carb diet give you kidney stones?

It's terrible for you. The doctor who invented it diet from it due to malnutrition.

Cutting out carbs is a colossally stupid idea. Your body needs that energy.

Point is, only hipster douchebags do Atkins. It's much easier to do a traditional diet than to walk around food stores with a calculator trying to determine what's Atkins approved or not.

The fuck are you talking about? It's damn easy. You can eat leafy greens, just not too much tubers, grains or fat in meats because fat is still carbs.

The idea of bacon and fried eggs as an Atkins breakfast has to be the biggest misconception out there.

like any other diet, it stops working after a while and then you get fat when you go off of it (which is inevitable)

that is why you have to exercise

fat is not carbs by definition. carbs are carbs.

Yes, because a diet is just that. If you eat like a fucking retard then you add weight like one. YOU CAN NOT EAT MORE THAN YOUR BODY NEED WITHOUT TURNING INTO A FAT FUCK! yeah yeah. cruise control etc.

Only way to keep of the weight without exercise is to eat what ever you like, but no more than your body size required. For a normal non-fatty that is aprox. 2500kcal

EAT MEAT GUISE YOU'LL LOSE WATE LOL

all diets fall into one of two categories: the right diet, and wrong fad diets for retards.

the right diet is to eat mainly protein. lean meats, eggs, nuts, beans, soy etc. secondarily carbs (you need to burn them so that your body can use the protein to make muscle tissue) and third, low fat and low simple sugar. ice cream is not for every day. it is not okay to have just one or two cookies every day with lunch because they are small. your three (or more if you're on a workout program) meals a day should take the form of a meat and potatoes meal, that is to say, a lean protein, a moderate amount of carbs, and some vegetable or fruit matter.

cereal is not a meal. eating 2 bowls of special k as your daily intake before dinner will not make you healthy.

get it yet? it's simple. every culture in the world has dishes based around these dietary needs. protein, carbs, green vegetables. steak, potatoes and broccoli. chicken parmesan, asparagus, and spaghetti. fish, rice, and seaweed. whatever.

oh wow, he actually said that too... fuckin lol'd.

yeah guys, think about it, when you steak, it's basically just steak carbs, and eggs, loaded with chicken carbs.

would it be right in saying that if i was going to add some carbs in the form of pasta / rice. That the portion should be bigger / smaller than my own fist?

one of the trainers at my gym said that...
>> Anonymous

your post is incomprehensible. from what i can tell you're presuming to know what happens when i steak. and i can guarantee you that when i steak, no such thing as chicken carb loaded eggs have anything to do with it.

I'm on the atkins diet right now, I know it sucks but it clears up my acne so fuck it...

pic sort of related, except the beer

>>92641
yes this is a common piece of trainerly advice. if you're going for muscle gain (really pushing yourself pumping iron) you'll want to eat a little more than your fist size in protein AND carbs. if you're really pushing yourself to lose weight, keep the fist sized protein, and dump about 1/4 to 1/3 of the carbs. you want your body to burn through it, need more, and not use up the protien but instead your fat stores.

he fell down stairs, when I was a little kid I was on atkins and it was a lot of fun, but my doctor said it was bad to be on if your body still had developing to do, said it was a ketogenic diet, I'll look up what that means maybe, Anyways, Atkins is a good start up diet, then ease into just eating good carbs no empty carb and calorie foods, dunno....I need to do this again

He wouldn't have fallen if he hadn't cut nutrients from his diet. There's a reason people get dizzy when they physically exert themselves after not eating for a while.

op here, that's what i was thinking, Start of with the Atkins to shed some poundage so i can actually use the machines in the gym.

and then? ...then just eat fucking sensibly, i know what's bad for me, i just want to have enough confidence to actually get in the gym without wobbling about looking like an idiot.

The Atkins Diet works. I lost 60 pounds on it. I've had no trouble keeping the weight off for the last five years.
Unfortunately I lost both fat and muscle. luckily that was remedied with actually working out.

In retrospect I think the Atkins Diet (in all its specifics) was a bad idea. It doesnt' differentiate between transfats, saturated fats, or natural fats. Livestock is typically fed on a diet of mostly empty carbohydrates from grain, and then they dont move around at allso they wind up saturated with saturated fat. Saturated fat is of course absolutely horrible for your heart

A MODIFIED atkins diet is technically closer to what our natural diets were prior to modern mass cultivation of wheat, vegetables, and fruits. In our history, much of our diet has consisted of foraging (AKA exercising while looking for shit to eat) for whatever we could find. Fruits were a RARE treat. Past that, our diet consisted mainly of meat. Fish for example can contain a number of nutrients. This is where natural fats come into play. Natural fats are an excellent, clean, source of energy. Good luck on getting any though. Unless you like hunting.

yeah, thing is, fruit actually does grow on trees and is a staple food in the diet of many herbivores, would you believe. modern hunter gatherers eat that shit a bundle. so i really don't accept that fruit was rare. at all. perhaps in some parts of the world (europe) you would only be able to eat it in the summer/autumn months. that i can accept. but in more southern and particuly equatorial regions, i don't accept that at all.

@ OP

The atkins diet doesn't really make sense. If you're trying to lose weight; then overall calories and saturated fat are what you want to pay the most attention to; just exercise and take in 500 or so less calories a day than your body uses and you'll avg a 1lb loss every week.

If you're strength training then you're going to want to have a diet that's something like 45% carb, 35% protein, 20% fat or in slightly different proportions, but you don't really want to push protein much over 40% of your diet or fat over 25-30% of your diet.

Either way, as long as you're getting the amounts of protein that your body needs to build muscle and the necessary overall calorie count, then you don't really have to worry as much about avoiding carbs since that doesn't really matter at all.
>> Anonymous
>>93139

It's to do with how our bodies deal with the energy they take in. Too many refined carbs leads your body to pump out insulin, which stimulates the laying down of fat. Atkins removes 90% of refined carbs from your diet, meaning you don't lay down fat anymore.

I've lost over 75 pounds from Atkins. Took me a good 3 months.

>>92298With all the water Atkins dieters drink, kidney stones are a near impossibility, since nutrients have no real chance to settle at the bottom of the kidneys, what with all the added activity. Fail logic.

>>92305It's called ketosis. Look it up. If you don't feel like it, it's another process the body does when it's low on carbohydrate energy. Body doesn't require carbs. That's why there are fat stores.. Failed logic.

>>92328If you stopped eating twinkies to do Atkins, and you get back off of Atkins and back to your twinkie eating, what the fuck else are you to expect? Of course you gain the weight back, you twinkie eating retard. Failed logic.

>>93139Atkins makes sense. Protein and leafy vegetables keep the body fuller longer, in addition to drinking the extra water required to do the diet properly. Normally, a low carb dieter eats 500-700 calories less per day than they normally would. However, if you reduce the amount of carbs, the body goes into ketosis, which forces the body to turn fat into ketones, through ketosis. Ketones are burned in place of simple sugars, and excess ketones are expelled through waste product. Protein helps build muscle.

In a normal diet, calories burn and are replace when you take in excess carbs. In a low carb diet, the calories aren't replaced as easily.

Not failed logic, though. Just a lack of information on the diet.

I'm moving home for the summer in a week, after two years of college I have gained about 30lbs. My target goal is 180lbs and I stand 6 feet tall with a large frame (most people underestimate my weight, I used to be thick, but I lost alot of my muscle and gained fat). Now my mom and sister are doing the two week master cleanse and I am thinking of doing it with them. Is this a good start to kick off a new healthy lifestyle. Note I have been working out for the past month because I will be shoveling concrete for my summer job. I start my job May 24th so I won't be fasting while working 12-14 hour days. I plan on eating healthy and doing manual labor until school starts then I will begin a structured exericise routine

Do you honestly think that dietary fat is made out of strings of protein? Really, truly, honestly?
It's carbon and hydrogen, just like all the other lipids. It's classified as a carb under Atkins diet, and you do have to cut it off.

do you have any reccomendations for safe carbs, i really am new to this i know i could google, but what would be a good way to introduce carbs back once starting atkins.
