Hey /fit/

I wanna get into bow shooting, but I lack general upper body strength. I plan to work on this over the summer, but here's my question; What muscles are used in using a bow?

triceps?

Keep using the bow. Eventually your arms will grow acustomed to the strain and the proper muscles will grow.

i lol'd

biceps/back. it's a pulling motion.

work rows (any variation) and pull ups (assisted/jumping ones if you're too weak to do a pull up)

yeah rows are good, if you dont train your self and only shoot bow. only your Right (if you're right handed) hand will be training, and after a while it will look veeery freaky...

lats, erector, quads, shoulders.
Do deadlifts and barbell rows.

Only bow I have right now is a 100 ls compound, and I can pull it back about halfway, so just using it is a no-go

I see. Should I do what I originally planned? Focusing on bench press, deadlift and squatz to build overall strength before focusing on those specific muscles?

I think my bow is at.. like 55lbs or so, legal to hunt is 40 here. The only thing you can do is set your weight down and practice a lot. Archery is one sport you can train while doing it.

Set the weight down? I thought all bows were set at a predetetmined weight?

Also, if I practiced with it, how would I do it so I dont look like this?

Not composite bows, you bring it to the archery shop and they just throw an allen wrench in it, twist some mabobbers and its adjustable to a certain amount. you won't pull 80lbs out of a beginner bow. But no, they are adjustable

Huntingfag here.
Nope, most bows can be turned up or down 20+ lbs. Go to an archery or hunting forum for better tips. You don't need huge muscles to pull and hold bows nowadays because of the letoff. Also there's no point in shooting 100 lbs, archery is about accuracy, not speed. 50 lbs will pass through a deer just as well as 100 lbs, plus it's so much easier to draw on a cold stand in the middle of December.

I'm more interested in the target shooting myself.

So, if it's about accuracy, what is the advantage to a bow with a higher draw weight?

psst, a bow takes 2 arms to operate. if one arm uses the bicep, guess which muscle the other arm needs

seems like higher draw weight = more power = more range

bows are like anything start with a lower weight to get the proper form.. target bow's typically are heavier than hunting bows. with the stabilers crazy ass sights... It takes a lot of practice and good form....

I could wield a bow for the duration of gym classes when I was a lazy fat fuck.
