Hey I might start going to my campus gym on tuesdays and thursdays. I've never been inside an active gym before, meaning, I've been in there when it was empty.

What I'm getting at is: how do I act in a gym? What do I need to expect to see? How should I dress?

Make me feel comfortable. I'm not even familiar with using the machines. I'm gonna look like such a noob.

Go in there like you know what to do, overwork yourself, strain your muscles, do all kinds of stuff u shouldn't do, go home, feel like shit, repeat, learn, repeat, learn.

For your safetys sake i recommend getting help from someone that know what they are doing, preferably from a proffesional instructor, if available. You could seriously injure yourself if you are uncautious, so make sure you use everything more or less the right way.

Also, dont stand and admire your tiny biceps, it looks really stupid.

>how do I act in a gym?
You act as if you were working out.

>What do I need to expect to see?
People who look /fit/ter than you. Use that for motivation.

>How should I dress?
Wear something that does not restrict your movements (just go nakes) and shoes that do not slip.

>Make me feel comfortable.
Your place or mine?

>I'm not even familiar with using the machines.
Nobody did when they were starting out.

>I'm gonna look like such a noob.
Everbody did when they were starting out.

So should I ask the owner/employee how to use the machines? Or just stroll in and attempt to work them out by myself?
>> Anonymous
>>336805
Ask the instructor. That's what they're for.

oh my god, everythings a machine!

i fucking hate these "gyms", look at the selection of dumbbells top right that is pathetic!

Actually, I love these gyms. All the fags and girls are so busy on the machines I get the squat rack to myself.
>> Anonymous
>>337002

Nope, I get the one guy who takes forever to do partial squats with a yoga mat wrapped around the barbell.
>> Anonymous
>>337040
Lol. I usually get the 50-year-old-partial-squats-guy on the smith machine, so it all works out.

Yoga mat?

how do I act in a gym?
Don't walk around like a pompous ass who owns the place. Be considerate of the folks on the equipment around you and things will be fine.

What do I need to expect to see?
Um... expect to see people in rediculous outfits they should never have on, a few fat guys pretending to be buff guys,an array of women on the running machines and a couple of nerds trying to get big.

How should I dress?
Where vented basketball shorts or anything like that. A plain t-shirt is good or a tank top if that is more comfortable.

Make me feel comfortable. I'm not even familiar with using the machines. I'm gonna look like such a noob.
Most of the machines will have directions on a little sticker attached somewhere to the machine, showing how to use them and what they work.

Also,a Tues, Thurs regiment may not be enough if you are looking to see results.

That's why I don't go to the gym and I work out at home. If I went to the gym I know would over train every time .
>> Anonymous
>>337047

I guess the guy didn't like the feel of barbell on his neck vertebrae, so instead of getting his form right, he wraps a yoga mat around the thing as a cushion.

i don't work out at public gyms because there's too much distraction

last thing i want is a bunch of tools talking next to me when i'm overhead squatting

you need to wear a pink polo shirt (collar popped) and some ratty gym shorts and a nice pair of sandals.

use the squat racks to do curls and call everyone 'brah'. remember to do at least 15 sets of curlz for da gurlz.

if someone is using the equipment you want to use ask if you can work in, then do 500 reps with the lowest weight.

make sure to tell everyone lifting less than you that their just lifting peanuts.

When you first start out, how do you know what weights to use etc? Is it just trial and error?
>> Anonymous
>>336717
Is that the entire gym? Looking a bit small, I suppose its free?

For most exercises learning correct posture and technique is essential.
For squats, benchpress, barbell rows, military presses you want to use just the barbell at first to get the movement down, then add 5lbs after every workout until shit gets tough and then add just 2lbs per workout. Whenever you experience that your technique starts to suffer or you fail to properly do the last rep of the last set, use less weight.
For deadlifts you can start with more weight and add more until it gets hard and then work with smaller increases.
Always warm up properly before exercise, say, if you're going to bench 200lbs you want to start with 20xbarbell, 10x100, 8x130, 6x160..

No that's a googled image

The gym we have are two floors. Bottom is weight lifting, top is cardio,
not including all the other rooms we have.
I go to a swanky U.

They're the only days I'd have time to do it. I don't live on campus and I don't drive.
I'm only doing cardio tho, I'm a girl and I'm not interested in beefing up right now, just getting rid of the jiggles. Also it'll give me something to kill 2 hours with while I wait for all my friends to get out of class.

my gym is liek that too. Mine is called "The Pulse" and they play a radio station by the same name. Kinda lame.

My gym also has a no tank top policy.
Wear running shoes, shorts are good and a t-shirt of any kind (when I bought my shorts I bought this t-shirt that has liek these holes in them which I think makes you squat moar)

Act in a gym? You walk around until you find something that is not being used. Then you use it. If you don't know how, ask someone. Eg. The elliptical and cycling machines require you to start pedalling first before they turn on.

Treadmills need keys which you might have to ask in order to use them.

I think most places require equipment to be wiped, usually there will be bottles and a towel nearby that are supposed to be used for this.
