So what is the difference between firm and soft tofu?

I've been eating soft and it's 20g of protein per package. I bought the firm today because there was no soft at the store, I noticed firm is 80g of protein per serving but it's fucking DISGUSTING to eat.. and it was a giatn fucking brick.. will this make me shit?

Which tofu does /fit/ eat?

Both.

The difference is in the consistency. There should be no difference in taste, the only reason it would taste different would be because it's made by a different brand, or perhaps old or something.

I usually get firm tofu and bake or fry it in various sauces.

Soft tofu is useful to add to sauces or deserts to make them creamy.

Try doing this with firm tofu:
Press it for 30mins or so (to do this put a towel on top of it and put some cans or something else heavy on top - to get rid of excess water).
Then fry it for a few minutes until it starts turning brown.
Add some sauce to the pan - teriyaki is good.
Simmer until sauces has coated the tofu.

Delicious.

Dude, raw tofu is disgusting. You should never eat it raw.

If you want it cold then slice it up, cook it in a nice sauce, then refrigerate it and eat it like that. But raw? That's horrible, just horrible.

Soft I used with some yogurt and a frozen banana in the blender to make a smoothie.

Firm I cut into cubes and throw into stir fry with a bunch of veggies, a bit of meat (chicken, pork or beef) and some teriyaki sauce.

the only way you can eat soft raw tofu without it tasting like shit is if you add some ginger, welsh onion and soy sauce. try it faggot.

lol no need to call me a faggot, but yeah I've been eating it raw because I don't have a lot of time to cook but even adding something to it didn't cross my mind.

As for cooking it, I think I'll cook batches of it with teriyaki sauce so I can munch on it.

Any suggestions of a brand of teriyaki sauce from the store ? or a recipe some of you use to make your own sauce?

Not sure if this is really teriyaki, but it's a sauce I often make and it's similar to teriyaki:

Soy sauce
Mirin
Rice vinegar
Sugar

I'm not sure about the quantities, I just guess. But probably like 1 or tbsp of each of the first three, and like 1/2 tsp of sugar. If you want it thicker add a little cornstarch.

1) boil water
2) put in tofu and mushrooms
3) wait about 5 mins
4) turn heat off
5) throw in spring onions
6) stir a couple times
7) put all in a bowl
8) put in miso paste and mix up
9) enjoy your fuckwin miso soup

i don't know what it is called in English but it is a very popular Chinese and Vietnamese desert that is very easily prepared.

I eat firm because it prefer the texture, but more importantly it has more protein. Check the amount of protein per serving (make sure the serving sizes are the same)

I eat raw tofu in ponzu sauce if I'm hungry, want to eat snack on something healthy, and am too lazy to cook or prepare anything else- it's a habit I picked up from my mom, who always had tofu in the house. I actually really enjoy the flavor and texture. Mori-Nu silken firm is my tofu of choice.

The difference is water. Firm tofu has less water than soft. So basically, soft tofu is watered down to get that nice consistancy.

I dont know why, but I fucking lol'd hard

What the hell kinda tofu are you eating? I eat raw silken tofu every day and it tastes like nothing... maybe egg white but not gross. Soy sauce is all you need for flavor.

because tofu doesnt actually taste like anything?

I can eat it, but the texture is just so...urgh, its like eating fat.

Silken tofu, I usually slice it up and put white vinegar, soy sauce, chopped green onions, and drizzle some sesame oil on top. Drain it as much as possible so it absorbs betters.

Firm tofu, I like cutting it into wedges and hollowing out a hole that I fill with fish paste. Drizzle some oyster sauce on it and fry it up, it gives it a nice salty brown crust.

For the record, no one should be consuming soy products on a regular basis; fermented soy especially. (Tofu, Miso, etc..)

Soy is loaded in Trypsin inhibitors which damages your bodies ability to fully break-down proteins.

It's also loaded in Goitrogens which interfere with the proper functioning of your thyroid gland. In extreme cases, it leads to "Goitre".

Among MANY other things, it's not a health food.
