Hey /fit/, I'm planning on joining the army through ROTC when I get to college. I can pass the APFT easily as far as sit ups, and push ups go, but I'm worried about the 2 mile timed run.

I've always had trouble running and always feel like i'm gasping or breathe the whole time. At the moment I can run a quarter mile and then breathe pretty hard after it but then have more than enough energy to do it 6 times around. [before I started exercising again I would be ready to drop/black out after that]

I was wondering, how long would it take me to build up endurance as far as feeling like my lungs aren't going to pop to where I can run a mile like it is no problem? It seems like everyone I know can run 5 miles [crosscountryfags] without breaking a sweat.

Also body type, a bit chubby, lots of muscle from weight training class/gym nearly everday since august. 200 pounds 6'1"

Also when I run, the muscles on my shin feel such an intense burn. It incredibly hurts to run just because it feels like JUST those muscles are being worked out passed their limit.

This sounds like shin splints.

I have them and they're sore as fuck, do your shins get a really fucking bad burning sensation that causes you to stop running completely? When i used to do alot of running/walking it hurt even to walk at a decent pace when they were acting up.

I combated this by popping a few painkillers and plodding on at the advice of my doctor, i haven't had any extreme cases of it lately.

Yeah, it feels like a burn like I'm doing a workout with tons and tons of reps with light weight. The painkiller thing sounds like a really good idea, but it does feel like my muscles are going to explode.

During my usual mile run I have to stop half way just because of that, then when I start running again it immedietly kicks back in

Yeah, i had to do the same.

According to the doctor if i continued popping pills and running it'd eventually heal itself up. I have however heard of some cases that have been worse and continuing running has provoked the pain to get worse and generally the people doing it got injured.

Physiotherapy apparantly fixes it for good, if you have a university or something near you you can get this done fairly cheap from students there.
