So /fit/ tell me, what sport do you believe puts you in more shape than any other sport? Please nothing like Log throwing, etc.

There are all kinds of variations, and playing one sport may not necessarily make you a better athlete overall. It's called conditioning. Triathlons = endurance. Soccer = agility. Boxing = power. Olympic lifting = strength, etc.

Almost all NCAA wrestlers are usually in amazing shape. Ever seen Brock Lesnar before he was in pro-wrestling?

A lot of MMA fighters are in ridiculous condition. While others... not so much.

I will have to agree. The swimmers and gymnasts I know (even the girl gymnasts) are almost all in better shape than my highschool's football team.

Soccer. Seriously, what other sport do you know of that requires you to run around for 90 minutes? I bet they burn like 5000 calories a game.

Grappeling for 10-15 minutes straight, without any resting in a person's guard is probably equally hard or harder. It's hard to think that it would be and most un-knowledgeable people will be thinking, "LOL TWO HALF NAKED MEN ALL SWEATY HUGGING EACHOTHER LOL". Until you have learned about it or tried it, it's incredibly hard. You have to remember you're not only carrying your weight around, but defending from your others weight, and strength.

Only mid-fielders do the running. The others just basically stand around half the time waiting for the ball to come near them.

Hockey. Hockey players need it all.

-Upper body strength for checking/slapshots
-Lower body strength for quick bursts of speed
-Aerobic endurance to be able to skate for 30 minutes a game
-Anaerobic endurance to be able to take a long shift on the ice
-Quick reflexes (especially for goalies)
-Mental aptitude to know what the hell to do, where to skate, when to attack/defend, who to pass to etc.
-Balance and agility (don't think that needs an explanation, they fucking play on ice)

I'm surprised none of you have said track & field. Sprinters are by far the most conditioned and strongest of all athletes. Most of these guys could probably bench/squat more than football players.

AFL, midfeilders run approx 13kms per game. these guys aren't small either. they work out like crazy.

MMA fighting and Gymnastics. No doubt about it.

If by being in shape you want flexibility and muscular endurance, the latter. If in shape means top cardio conditioning and explosive strength, the former. However, Gymnastics also needs cardio conditioning and explosive strength, just as MMA needs flexibility and muscular endurance.

In other words, all aspects of fitness are encompassed in these two sports.

gymnastics, and we're missing the biggest one of all, crew

rowers use their whole bodies, squat a fuckton (each row is almost a squat), use up their anabolic potential in the start and have 20 more minutes to sprint

Which reminds me of the video of Jacare doing one handed pulls ups. None of that pussy shit with one arm on the other. And climbing the rope with one arm.

Baseball is mostly cared about by Americans. Compared to other sports, baseball players have the worst physiques. In fact, most baseball players I know make fun of the fact that they are mostly sitting and chewing on something in a game.

And there's also football. They may be very muscular, but god damn, a lot of unnecessary fat.

>And there's also football. They may be very muscular, but god damn, a lot of unnecessary fat.

Not all of the players are fat. The Running-backs, quarter-backs and receivers are all ripped.

And the linemen may be fat, but they are some of the strongest athletes in the world. Period. Most of them have 1RM squats in the four-digits.

Team sports: Lacrosse (don't even fucking start. fastest outdoor sport. period.), basketball and football (if you're not a lineman)
Individual: Wrestling (if you take your cutting phase serious, like I and most wrestlers did) and gymnastics.

Doesn't realize baseball is incredibly popular in Latin-America, and Japan. Not quite soccer(football) popular, but very popular.

...and I'm not a religious guy at all. But I just walked out of the High School gym after watching a wrestling meet for the first time ever and now I'm born again. Whatever the hell that means.

I've been taking judo for a while, and have tinkered in everything else (mostly TMA crap) for at least 20 years. I'm an aquaintance of the H.S. wrestling coach, and this year started volunteering my time to help out with the team (at this point I'm just observing).

I could go on about the work ethic of wrestlers (they train at least 3 hours a session 6 days a week, and that's not including weight room and extra cardio stuff). Their "rest day" workout the night before the competition was as grueling as a real tough night at my judo club. Not to be too much of a nuthugger here, but it is impressive.

And the meet tonight was so cool.
There was a single huge light hanging over the center of the mat. All the other lights were out. So everything was black except the big circle of the wrestling mat.
The crowd was small, but very vocal and enthusiastic.
After watching and competing in a bunch of judo tournaments, where there's usually 2 to 3 mats going at the same time, it was refreshing to have all the action focused on one match at a time.
The action was non-stop.

LISTEN. I'm telling you guys who are in H.S. and involved in Judo or BJJ or whatever: go join the wrestling team NOW! It's free, you'll have excellent coaching, lot's of mat time, and your shoots and positioning will be outstanding. Even though the season has already started, wake up tomorrow and walk into your H.S. wrestling coaches office and tell him you want to join wrestling. You will never, ever, ever regret it.

You other guys who are into BJJ or Judo but are older, and never did wrestling, go to your local H.S. wrestling coach and ask him how you can become involved. He'll probably be very glad to have the help. Really. The coach I'm dealing with now wanted me to get on the mat the very first day to give his guys someone new to roll with.

If nothing else, go support your local H.S. or College wrestling team. If you're into grappling at all, and have never been to a wrestling meet, you'll kick yourself for having waited so long to go watch one. They're a lot of fun, and pretty damned inspiring.

God bless H.S. Wrestling.

I hate you Anon. I really do. First off, you never, EVER, AND I MEAN NEVER! Describe a wrestling meet in such a in-depth manner, with wrestlers who don't wrestle any more. I seriously almost shed a tear knowing I had my final wrestling season last year in high school, and stacked on top of that was the fact that I was in a slump for over half the wrestling season. Atleast I have Judo and Submission Wrestling :/ It sure isn't the same though....The atmosphere is just so amazing. I remember having a match just liked you described. It was in the finals of a local tournament. I ended up pinning the guy I was wrestling via banana split, and got a huge pop from the crowd. It was great having all the lights off, beside the center one and having all the attention. On top of that it was the first tournament I had ever gotten 1st place in. I still treasure the death out of that medal. DAMNIT! I NEED WRESTLING! I am going to make a serious effort to try and get a Freestyle or Greco-Roman club going! GAHHHH

Soccer. In most games the flow of play doesn't stop much so you pretty much run around kicking and heading a ball for 45+ minutes at a time.
