Alright /fit/. What are the most important muscles to train for long term health? I don't want to get into bodybuilding, I want to focus on living for a very long time.

Anaerobics, anything consisting with respiration, stretching. Run alot, do the basic 5x5 pushups/pullups and get toned. It will make your life easier and more stress-free. When stretching, find and make time in your day to do it. Hold it for more than 30 seconds, take deep breaths and be calm.

I will answer your question. Your heart. But don't overwork it. stress will kill you faster than an upsized combo at burger king.

weightlifting is for vanity, cardio is for longevity. train your heart by running a 5 k two or three times a week.

Cardio obviously.

As for weight training, I would imagine your legs and back (particularly lower back) would be key, as long as you don't strain them.

Weightlifting isn't for vanity. Most competitive lifters have physiques that look remarkably average compared to bodybuilders. Besides, weightlifting increases flexibility, elbow/ankle/hip mobility, strength, and bone density, all of which I imagine are pretty important to health, especially for older people.

Won't that mess up your joints in the long run?

Complete opposite. Running wreaks your joints. Weightlifting strengthens them. Even your spine gets strengthened.
Overall better health and hormonal balance.
Running: Feel like a wimp all the time.

Walking gives you the same benefits as running minus join problems.
