first, you're not trying to lose "pounds" necessarily, but fat. you lose fat by creating a defecit between what you eat every day and how many calories your body burns on a daily basis.
so multiply your body weight by about 14 and that's a rough estimate of how many calories you burn. do some daily exercise and stay pretty close to or underneath that aforementioned number and you should start to lose fat.
fat in the midsection is usually the last to go, so don't get discouraged.
situps can hurt your back (and if you put your hands behind your head it can hurt your neck from pulling). crunches are best, modified crunches (see exrx.net) are even better. this will not necessarily make your six pack show more but will define it better.
