>When you go barefoot, your movements become the movements of a child—playful and sensitive, yet purposeful and confident. You experience the unbound joy of stepping, hopping, and running across any surface on earth, simply to get from here to there.

>FiveFingers® footwear frees you to relive that sensation. Unlike conventional shoes that insulate you from your surroundings, FiveFingers footwear deepens your connection to the earth and your natural environment. It enhances your tactile sense of touch and feel, making you acutely aware of your body and dramatically improving both balance and agility. Because wearing Vibram FiveFingers is so close to going barefoot, you enjoy the health and performance benefits of barefooting without some of the risks.

What the fuck? How does it deepen the sensation of being barefoot? You're wearing rubber over the soles of your feet.

Been a new balance fag since 1998. I need new running shoes, these vibrams seem like a gimmick, but fuck, if Wii was a gimmick then I'm going to get myself some 70 dollar feet condoms.

It's a lot closer to barefoot than most thick-heeled running shoes. The soles are thin and flexible, which allows you to run more efficiently using a forefoot-strike, rather than the typical heel-strike that heavier, thicker shoes force you into. You could just run barefoot, but then you pose the risk of stepping on glass or something and fucking yourself up.

Not to mention that Vibrams have a 750 mile life expectancy.

For a clarification on forefoot-strike versus heel-strike, see this:
http://www.newtonrunning.com/run_better.php
The shoes on that site look pretty good, and are more in the conventional style, but for that price tag, I prefer the Vibrams.

I really wanted to get a pair, but fear that they won't fit my toes and will cause discomfort. Do you have this problem? I don't have manfreak gorilla toes or anything... just don't see how one-size-fits-all would be comfortable.

I want to get them for next Cross Country season. I usually run in some clunky Asics, but wanna try spikes for the first time. Would Some Vibrams be a nice replacement for the Asics?

Are you serious? Do those things even have any support at all?

I run in Nike Pegasus now, but I'm a recent convert. I used to go for Saucony Trigon 5's. Both are great shoes, but the Nikes have a shorter break in period.

Crappy Skechers.

That's a fancy way of saying "these won't protect your feet much".

The Vibram website has a sizing chart. I've got the Sprints style (has a strap over the top for more security), following the chart, and the heel comes out just a bit long, but your foot sort of sinks into it once you've worn them for a minute. It'll feel awkward the first few times you put it on, but it gets better quickly.

No support at all.

You may think that's absurd, but what do you think people did before "Nike Shox With Xtreme Abzorbing Action" did? Not run?

When running correctly, your calves and foot arches will absorb all of the impact, rather than the shoe cushioning and your joints. However, that does make it very critical that you run with a good forefoot-strike (see>>15913), because if you try to do a heel-strike in Vibrams, you'll feel it. Your calves will be sore about 5 days after your first run, but it gets much better after that, and you can run pain free, even on concrete.

Sounds interesting. I have good form (no heel striking), so someday, I might try that.

But right now, I think I'll stick to my Pegs.
