I race this cat 3. I like it, but manufacturers need to stop making compact frames and sloping top tubes.

If you are over 200 lbs. Make sure you get a high spoke count on your wheels so they do not taco. Go steel frame and fatter tires for a comfortable ride.

I was in about the same situation at the beginning of the semester, but I'm not as big as you. I'd go with a cheap hybrid, its what I got but the roads and walkways I end up going on are so shitty that I think I should have gone with a bike that had full suspension on it to save my ass some pain.

Do trials, use a self built bike mainly from cheap & second hand ebay parts which is great for just throwing it about.

I ride a simple Specialized Allez. Nothing special. Looking to get a Cervèlo tri bike soon though.
