Going to purchase a body fat scale. Anonymous
Is there anything I need to know when purchasing one? Like if the more expensive ones are more accurate.

I've found one similar to the one in the picture at Wal-mart for 25 dollars.

Are body fat scales accurate ways to tell how much body fat you have?

I would say one that is $25 is a piece of shit.

I was thinking it was too good to be true.

Why would a cheaper scale be less accurate than an expensive one?

What DONT they do with a cheaper body fat scale as opposed to a more expensive one?

Useless. It pretty much only tells you the bodyfat % in your lower body.

Do things the old fashioned way. It takes longer, but is more accurate.

Uhm, this is the first time I've ever seen one of those things. How can a scale meassure body fat%?
Don't you need fancy hightech equipment that compares your musclemass to fat and all that. The best I can imagine you can get from one of these is your bmi...
So how does it work?

I have one of those stupid things, and apparently I either have 5% or 22% bodyfat.

Save your money.

I have one of the cheaper Tanita ones
my bf% varies from 13 to 20 as the day progresses
save your cash like>>264547said
they are horribly inaccurate

I don't think they're THAT bad.

I started out at 18st 4lb in January, Now down to 13st 4lb.

The scale started at 33% bodyfat and now the lowest it goes is 19% and the highest is 22%

So it does work to an extent.

Sends an electric current up one leg and down the other and uses that, and your measurements to determine body fat.

Doesn't work though because electricity will take the shortest path through your body and so it only does your lower body.

use a caliper, works better and more accurate and costs nothing

1. Go to a gym
2. Pretend to care
3. Before "signing up" ask for them to measure your bf%
4. ...
5. Profit!

Why use one of these instead of a digital caliper?
