Hi /fit/

I'm wondering what is a decent goal for cardiovascular exercise? I read here that a pound of fat is 3500 calories, and that recommended weight loss is two pounds per week. That's a thousand calories a day. I've done it for a few days now, splitting the time into two segments. It's not too bad, I guess...just really boring.

Not sure if this matters, but I'm 24m currently at 200 lbs, hoping to drop to about 170. This isn't a rush job either...I just want to make progress without lapsing.

My question to you: is burning a thousand calories per day too much? Too little? I know next to nothing about this; any help will be most appreciated.

1000 a day seems a little much, you have to keep in mind that your body burns a lot of calories on its own, especially if you're heavy. keep a VERY close eye on how many calories you're eating too. if you cut out just a few hundred extra calories from your diet, that's just that much more exercise that you don't have to do.

either way, just make sure you don't push yourself too hard, and also take rest days. you can still do your cardio on rest days if you like, just do maybe half as much as usual. if you've never been a big exerciser in the past, you really shouldn't overdo it for a few weeks.

the problem i seem to be seeing on /fit/ is that it sounds like alot of people want to lose too much too soon.

All you should do is keep a steady healthy diet, reasonable exercise routine, and lay off junk food. All this will contribute to reduced risk of injury from overtraining, health complications, risking your body from switching to starvation mode, and it'll be easier to stick to a more general exercise routine but for a very long time rather than a hard routine but giving up soon after. Don't forget overtraining can be counterproductive.

OP, this link has a good discussion on the subject.
