The thing with getting great abs is, 1) you need to work them hard for growth, and 2) you need to have a low body fat % through diet and cardio.
Your abs are a little different from your other muscles. They respond to high-rep exercises better than low-rep, and they can recover in a much shorter time, 1-2 days.
His abs could be a lot better if he learned how to do something besides sit-ups
