(U.S. Bureau of Justice), incidents related to firearms accounted for 29,573 deaths in 2001. 802 of them were accidental firearm discharges. 16,869 were suicides. 11,671 were homicides (which don't just include murders, but also justified self-defense and when police have had to shoot people). 231 of the deaths were undetermined for these groupings, but were part of the incidents related to firearm deaths total. The .gov statistics site also breaks them up by years, by total deaths and by age groups
