Hey /fit/
I'm planning on becoming a pretty loose vegetarian really soon, but I'm thinking about the physical side affects I might get, so I have a few questions.

1) Without as much protein, or having trouble to find protein substitutes, will I begin to lose the muscle I have, or find it a lot harder to gain muscle? [I work out at the gym 2 hours a day 6 days a week]

2) I am overweight, 198 pounds, 6'1", mostly muscle, but still have a bit of a stomach [not big at all, it's just there], will I be losing weight drastically?

Any other side effects that I should know about, by becoming vegetarian?

And also, maybe some reccomended meals to eat ?

If you are becoming a vegetarian to lose weight, you are retarded.

Well not entirely to loose weight, but to be healthier in general

You can drink rice or soy protein with soy or rice milk. Plenty of fags will tell you not to touch soy because it'll give you bitch tits and turn you into a woman, which is unsubstantiated bullshit. It can be more expensive that whey, and is less efficient in building muscle (by about 10-20%), but if cost isn't an issue just buy it an eat 20% more per serving.

I'm not a vegetarian, I just don't touch dairy, so most of my protein comes from chicken, but I make up the extra protein intake with either soy or rice or both.

Yeah. It's happened to one or two people I know. Your hair starts thinning out and then falling out. Like I said, get your B12 and other essential vitamins.

As a former meat-eater,
You don't need lean meat to be healthy. In fact, with all the additives and processing, you're better off not eating it.
There are substitue lists online for how to get the nutrients in meat from non-meat. Veg foods are typically lower in fat and calories than your standard meat portion, so you can lose weight with a veg diet.

Soy is great for iron. You can eat soy-meat (I love the hot dogs and boca burgers. They taste like meat, unlike garden burgers.) There are lot of conversion charts online so you can grind tofu-meat into your conventional meat recipe. You will NOT have an iron deficiency if you eat your soy.

The biggest traps in vegetarianism are "fake health foods," overdosing on bread products, and the evil corn starch. Read food labels, and you'll quickly spot the traps! Don't ever assume that anything is healthy just because it's organic or is marketed that way.

As for dried fruit? Wtf lol, most of us vegs don't touch the stuff. It's nasty.

Finally, your hair will not fall out unless you are genetically predisposed to male pattern hair loss. Just look at all the balding guys who aren't veg! ;-)

You can get vitamin b12 in eggs (surprise! they aren't meat!), fortified breakfast cereals, and some kinds of American cheese.

Boca burgers are possibly the most disgusting thing I've ever seen masquerade as food. And why the hate for delicious dried fruit? Don't tell me you hate raisins.

This. Going vegetarian is fine, but you have to be smart about it and eat the right foods. Becoming vegetarian won't make you super skinny overnight. Stuff like ice cream, french fries, and soda are all vegetarian and still bad for you.

tl;dr: You still have to watch what you eat as a vegetarian.

Not true. I know a girl who had it happen to her and a guy with no record of baldness in his family. I know, unverifiable anecdotes over the internet. OP, go here, it has some good info; http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/vitaminb12. Believe me if you want.

Every year, there are over 75 million cases of food poisoning in the US. 70% of them are caused by contaminated animal flesh. (source: United States Department of Agriculture.)
Some of these cases are caused by badly prepared food, but many more are caused by putrid farm conditions. This isn't an issue of animal rights, but an issue of how the animal meat is contaminated in these mass-farms. Many of these food poisoning cases were caused by antibiotic residue in flesh, as well as horrible bacteria which develops because of farm animal living conditions. The hormones used to speed growth affect humans negatively as well. While the USDA claims that there is a withdraw time which allows for the hormones to leave the animal's body.Yet hormones are still being found after this proces- and many of those leak out to the public.

If Mad Cow disease was any indication, the way meat is processed in current times makes it more dangerous to eat. This is not the meat of the good ole days, where farmers did not use additives and the amount of livestock was smaller, so it was easier to care for and protect from diseases.

It's your choice what you decide to do, but think twice where the meat on your plate comes from... and what's been put into it.

Free range organic, man,.

From people at grocery stores, I heard they mix the organic items with non organic a lot, or they end up touching each other, so paying so much more is actually not worth it

Dude, being vegetarian wont really cause drastic weight loss.

I have been vegan for a year now and ironically enough when I originally went vegan I actually GAINED weight.

As for protein I wouldnt sweat it. I mainly eat raw fruits and vegetables and do not take any protein supplements yet I seem to be doing just fine! Although I mainly work out to cut down on body fat not to get ripped or whatever.
