/fit/ my problem is I get bored at the gym. There are tv's set up in front of the treadmills, so I usually run on those for fifteen minutes, then I move on to the machines, I don't use free weights. When I'm on the machines I can usually only do around three sets on four or five machines before I get bored and leave. That results in only a half hour spent at the gym, and I feel like I'm not doing anything.

Advice?

Get some self discipline.

If you don't want to be there, don't go.

A workout partner COULD help you with motivation, but I think you would just use him/her for conversation.

challenge yourself. make every workout get you to the point of kicking your ass.

Damn, I wish I could get a girlfriend let alone one willing to waste an hour to tell me I'm a sack of shit.

one other thing to consider, is finding things that motivate you in other ways. for me, certain songs in particular always get my energy level way up. even when i'm in the middle of a tough set or a hard portion of a run i'll push that much more if the right music comes over the headphones.

only you know what'll work for you, so it's your responsibility to find what it is that will make you get off your ass and hit the gym.

I run outside on dirt instead of at a treadmill, so I spend an hour lifting at the gym, 2 hours of exercise total.

Find some reason to work out, like a higher goal. Join a sport or something so you have a reason to work out.

I'm off my ass and at the gym, and for that half hour I get myself pretty tired, and my muscles ache a little the next day. But since it's only a half hour I feel like I'm a pussy.

if you're getting in your full workout, it doesn't matter if it takes you a half-hour or three hours. if you're having an issue with not doing enough, stop going in without a set workout plan.

"When I'm on the machines I can usually only do around three sets on four or five machines before I get bored"

that's your problem right there - you shouldn't be going in to the gym without already knowing what you're going to do that day. have a full plan, and stick to it. use your improvement as your motivation - otherwise, why bother going in the first place?

good luck, fellow mis/fit/

Also, music may help keep you entertained.

I was bored at the gym recently, but for XMas, I got an Archos 504 and loaded it with movies. I basically watch entire movies and TV shows on it and don't get bored anymore like I used to.
I also see some people bring magazines, and lay them out on the face of the treadmill. Try that?
I don't know what to say about machines- they're boring as crap, I agree.

I bring my mp3 player, maybe I need new music because the recycled stuff I've heard thousands of times is getting kinda old.

I like the idea that as long as I'm getting my full workout in it's fine, as for the set plan, I've tried that, and I end up breaking it because I hate myself and refuse to do what I tell myself to.

Also, I don't really take a break at all when I'm there, so maybe after five minutes of stretching/rest I'll be okay to keep working.

I dunno.

Go with a friend. Eventually you'll just get in the habit and be able to do it without the friend.

I have two friends with memberships, one never makes/keeps plans so I stopped calling him to see if he wanted to go, the other is just fucking lazy. I wish I had someone to go with.

go with the set plan. don't break it. for every set you do make sure that you are struggling or near failure at the last 2-1 rep. if you can comfortably finish your sets without even breaking a sweat, you need to up the weights.

Lol, I have that problem too. They're the only people I purposely BRAG to when I lose weight.

Anyways, I suggest making time for "alternative" cardio. Find a place to skate or save up for Dance Dance Revolution, if you have a gaming console.
If I ever don't feel like going to the gym, I do those instead.

I always feel like going to the gym, and feel like working out. Its just repeating the same motions over and over get old fast.

The only thing that can hold my attention for a full half hour is the treadmill, and I can't run for long distances so it's mostly me walking fast and sweating my balls off. I feel like a pussy when I'm on the treadmill instead of doing the weight machines, and I haven't researched it, but I feel like they're less effective in making visual changes to my body.

As for the machines, I have noticed slightly more definition in my arms and dramatic shrinkage in my man-tits.

Maybe I should just keep it up.

you're not working hard enough.

If you work hard, you won't be bored. You'll be working hard. Period.

Motivate yourself by taking a notebook and pencil to the gym and make a record of how many sets/reps you're doing of each exercise, and at what weight, if it's a free-weight or machine exercise. Bring an iPod to listen to, or some radio chat show. Have some small treat set aside for yourself which you're only allowed if you do the full 45 minutes (a protein bar or shake, your Gameboy, a magazine, whatever floats your boat).

The time will fly, man.

Actually 30 minutes of cardio doesn't burn much fat. It takes 30 minutes just to burn off your glycogen stores. So unless you're running on an empty stomach, then you need more like 45-60 minutes of straight cardio.

We all want the same goals, I guess

this is why i recommend to people to lift first before doing cardio.
