Dear /fit/ Anonymous
Today was my first day at the gym in over 2 years...
To the weight lifters: during one workout session, should you work out muscle groups or opposing muscles? And if you are just starting out, should you use free weights or machines?

Use every single piece of equipment you can. And just pick up a muscle magazine at a store, it'll tell you all you need to know.

It's always good to do exercises that work multiple muscle groups at once, or compound, and then to focus on certain muscles (like biceps for example), or isolation. Generally, machines are for maintaining, and not building muscle. Your muscles will break down a whole lot more using weights as opposed to machines. BUT, thats a a two sided coin. Using all the weights in the world will not be beneficial if your form is off. So I would say look up some exercises you wanna do online, try to mix it up, and make sure your form is your number one priority. Happy Hunting!

Work groups on machines for for weeks. Do cardio twice a week min.. GOTO free weights afterthat.

I just re read your post and saw that you said you are just starting off. i deleted my old post, but if you already saw it don't listen to what i said. you need a good program for beginners. rippetoes starting strength is good. a lot of people do 5x5 programs which are also good. you want to lift free weights.
