I would say it is very detrimental, but you can still make gains while maintaining a social life. The extra calories are not even the issue, those can easily be worked off or worked into your daily caloric intake. The problem is that binge drinking degrades and can even halt testosterone production. It also spikes stress hormones. Furthermore, since it damages the liver, it decreases liver glycogen. Your friend may very well have outstanding genetics and thus be able to balance the two well. Just imagine if he focused solely on bodybuilding
