MEDICAL information on supplements? Anonymous
anyone know a reliable source of information (i.e. based on scientific evidence) about supplements? outside of wikipedia (which is dubious at times anyway), i can't seem to find any remotely trustworthy information on any kind of supplement. (every site is just trying to sell shit. apparently every herb and amino acid ever invented is the greatest shit ever).

prescription drugs are easy to find info about, but for example i'm trying to read about GABA (for anxiety and insomnia, aunt recommended it to me but she's the type where it could have just been the placebo effect), and it's hard to find any page that actually backs up its praise or criticism with evidence (most make references to studies saying this or that but never link to them)

as long as they are not making specific claims as a health aid, nutritional supplements are not regulated by the FDA and are not required to publish information.

and you're exactly right, they will quote studies but rarely link to them. it's marketing, not science.

i knew all that...

i'm asking if there are any worthwhile sites that actually review/test these things rather than sell them.

There's a chapter of this book entirely dedicated to talking about supplements.

If you really want to know, then go to the primary litrature - google scholar it. Dont be scared by scientific papers, most are written to be read without much knowledge of the area. empirical data ftw

?? i'm not scared of scientific papers, that's exactly what i'm trying to find. but like i said whenever i google shit i just get sites trying to sell said supplements, and the studies/research papers are always talked about but never linked to.

>google scholar

do you speak it motherfucker!

try searching for generic things the supliments contain rather than trade names (riboflavin rather than centrum)?
