heya /fit/

any of you guys ride a fixed bike? or a bike that's totally stripped down.

i'm thinking of building one, they look freaking sweet. and i live in a big city so i could really use one. (my old big got stolen, boo)

if you do drive one, any tips for a beginner? (frame/wheels et cetra)

lol hipster bikes

Why would you want to ride a bike like that? It must be awful, it makes no sense. Get a real bicycle, something that can actually be efficient in transporting you from A to B.

They're a lot of fun for just fucking around, but yeah. Get yourself a 10 speed, son.

get a brake
make sure bike fits
choose gear wisely

yeah i ride fixie. I have a surly. If you have never ridden one before, especially in the city of all places, be sure you have a hand brake (or two). If you simply want a fixie for aesthetic purposes, then go with a single speed. They look exactly the same but you can coast. you can also get a flip flop hub and switch between the two (this is probably your best bet). I think fixies (or any single speed for that matter) are great for city riding because they have few parts to steal or break. Make sure none of your bolts are quick release and get a sturdy u-lock

i want a fixie not only because im a hipster scum, but because they are minimalistic, sleek, and very nice looking.

i like how hipsters cling to their fixies because theyre minimalistic and thus non materialistic. and oh yeah, they also run upwards of 700 dollars.

did you come to this forum because /n/ hates you?

I do ride a fixed road bike conversion. But I have brakes and none of that hipster deep-v bs.

mostly this does not belong on this board.

my fixie conversion cost 300.

All new components, but I did everything myself... including build the wheels.

I ride a fixie that's about 300 bucks in parts and beat the shit out of it... I can also do over a half-mile of elevation gain on it with 49-16 gearing. Anyone who cannot do at least a quarter mile elevation on a fixie without stopping is a hipster faggot and should die in a fire.

Needless to say I also train on a $5k+ race bike religiously... Full Dura-Ace 7700, shit is so cash.

tldr; Put on mileage, and elevation, lest you be a faggot hipster.

did you already have the frame or is that included in the 300?

Frame came from old craigslist bike (old middle line schwinn). Whole old bike cost like $40. Lugged frame ~58cm, kept the drops, stem, seat, seat post, cantilever brakes and (somewhat) obviously fork. I got some components for free (new brake lever) and bought the rest and built it myself.

I have put ~200 miles on my wheels and they are fine(not out of true, no bent spokes, no bad noises) but I would suggest not building your own wheels, apart from gaining experience it is not much cheaper than getting them built. Or buying just some crappy machined wheels =/

and is included in the price..........

thats a good find. I've rarely seen frames on CL under 75 bucks. they're usually 100-150

Have you gone by a bike shop and asked them? The bike shop I go to has a big rack of old road frames & forks that sell for like $50. I got my old Benotto frame and fork for like $40...

CL depends on where you live, I'm in Milwaukee and the hipster crowd hasn't sucked up all of the good old road bike frames yet.

But if you live in someplace like SF.....

I steal bikes, and ride whatever.

So far I alternate between a cruiser and a roadbike, don't know much else about them.
