...Obviously, you weren't the fastest sprinter if you didn't sprint.
Run a mile for a day for a few weeks, two miles the next week, three miles every other day, then bring your self about at five miles, just to see if you can take it. If not, revert back to a slower distance. Love hills, or you'll ruin yourself.
Get on track with the local runs, and if there aren't any, make some. Get to know some people that will run with you in the mornings so 5 miles isn't a ridiculous bore.
If you're still in high school, or college, join the goddamned track team. The only way people will make fun of you for being slow is if you bitch about it, but it you let them know you're there to run, then you're there to run.
