how good/bad is chili for you?

for example, my basic recipe
1.5lb of lean beef
1 red bell pepper
1 half large white onion
1 large can of stewed tomatoes
1 small can of tomatoe paste
1 reg can of dark red kidney beans
1 reg can of black beans
chili powder and cumin used generously
1/4 shaker of cayenne powder

im pretty out of shape/have a poor diet and im trying to better my situation. im looking for easy to make foods (see above) that are healthy for me too. chili is damn tasty and i always feel like i have loads of energy (not hyper but POWER) after eating it.

can i keep teh chili on my list?

Drop the tomato paste, its loaded with sugar. Also drop the kidney & black beans and its not that bad providing you eat it with vegetables (assuming you're cutting).

shit, then thats what was making it sweet... i kept dumping cayenne in to try and fight it... oh well, i like it hot anyways

but, i though beans were good? arent they loaded with proteins and fibers? what other veggies could i add to chili>?

I fucking love chili.

Chili is man-food. Vegetables are not. Don't eat vegetables with your fucking chili, unless you want me to come over there and revoke your man-card.

Also, it's really not bad for you. It's not the best thing you could be eating, but if you're like me (see: NOT A FAGGOT) and don't bother with strictly portioned food and dieting plans then you're good - just as long as chili doesn't become a main part of your diet. 2-4 times a week is fine.

I don't know, look up the beans on the can and make your choice whether or not to put them in. I can't remember, i thought kidney beans had a carb content higher than i thought they would. I only really suggest dropping them because if its an evening meal you more than likely dont need to keep adding extra carbs that you wont be using. If they are high in protein and fairly low in carbs and they fit into your limits, by all means put them in.

ok

>2-4 times a week is fine.

wat, lol. anyways, im poor and beans add good filler and taste appropriate for chili. veggies are only for flavoring. i aint putting no tofu or lettuce in mah chili er nuttin

i don't get it. I thought chili was mainly beans. how can you cut out both beans and tomato paste and still retain chili?

beans are AWESOME

do not, i repeat DO NOT stop eating beans.

are you OP? i think chili is fine too. i find that i can eat stuff like that (half decent ingredients, filling, proper nutritional content) as long as i eat modestly and keep up the workout routine.

lol agreed

actually, vegetarians rely big time on beans and legumes for the protein and nutrition. fwiw.

Chili is mainly tomatoe base and beef and some sort of pepper(s)

The beans, other veggies etc are all bulking/flavoring agents. Beans, specifically, were added by poor people.

In fact, I'm not even sure about the tomatoe base, its just extremely common. Chili is pretty much beef and chili peppers. They would just let the rough cuts of meat simmer in pots with peppers and whatever else they could find. (They is referencing the cowboys who invented it, of course)

Sometimes you have to make healthier alternatives if you want to enjoy the same meal. Tomato paste is loaded with sugar, its your choice whether you just eat regular chili or make it healthier. To me chili is minced beef, tomatoes, onions and spices. Almost like spag bol.

Yah... i is op

Chili was my alternative to things like eat out pizza and fast food during my lunch break. That, combined with eating a breakfast every morning (just whole milk + frosted mini wheats or apple cheerios). I feel alot better already.

Also, would a vitamin deficiency cause weird things like chest pains and weird nerve problems? I was getting just phantomass pains that seemed to go away when i started eating a little better...

sub the beef for 97/3 ground turkey; you won't taste a difference but you'll get less fat

do everything fresh

if you don't wanna puree tomatoes or cut them up, buy Central Market tomato puree...they don't add anything to it, really

also find canned stuff with no salt added

then you'll have fuckwin healthy chili

i did that, and a full meal of chili is like 600 cals with a shitton of protein adn fiber with hardly any starch, sugar, fat, or cholesterol

also throw in some jalapenos or habaneros

garlic, too

maybe some tomatoes for more vitamin a

basically you can make chili your one-a-day vitamin by adding any veggie you need for certain vitamins

and FUUUCK it's good

i think i'm going to make a week's worth tomorrow for this coming workweek

could i just cut up fresh tomatoes and end up with stewed tomatoes once the chili is done cooking? would i have to do any more to the tomatoe other than cutting out the stem?

how the fuck do i prepare beans from scratch? is it nutritionally worth it?
>> Anonymous
>>240660
dont quote me but all ur cuttin out is the sodium. plus homemade beans take long to prepare, just get your grandma to do it for you or else you'll be wastin time.

and you best be 12 years old cus we dont have time to be givin you a damn cooking lesson.

for from-scratch tomatoes, you can dice them and while cooking them they'll soften and become a paste as water evaporates during the simmering/boiling period, concentrating the flavor--personally, i just get no-sodium-added central market tomato puree just to save time

for beans, you soak them in water for a couple hours, then put them in boiling water for a while like rice

but i don't use beans because that shit's for poor people

Try to skip the canned stuff to reduce the sodium. Replace the tomatoes with real ones to reduce sugar AND sodium. In general, you want to go with food that has a little preservatives & chemicals & crap in em as possible.

2 - 4 times a week? I approve (not that I'm special or anything).
