swimming: how good it is too build up muscle? i am a fairly skinny guy, will swimming help me with that?
>> Anonymous
It's not the best, if you're aiming for pure muscle mass. Take a look at professional swimmers' bodies to see the slim, firm, toned look it gives.

Still, it's great exercise as it works your whole body and is unlikely to damage your joints.

I guess it would depend on which style you were swimming in, also if you wanted it for muscle gain your body weight while suspended in water probably wouldnt do a whole lot. But dont take it from me, a more experienced mis/fit/ will be able to say more.

You'll hardly any muscle from swimming. You could probably liken it to the amount of leg muscle you would gain by running alone. Professional swimmers have good genes (broad shoulders, long limbs, big hands/feet etc) and have specialised training regimes. You will not look like them unless you trained like them and had their genes.

If you're a skinny guy, lift weights. But don't get me wrong, swimming is an awesome exercise - it just isn't the right one for building muscle.

Do you mean low bodyfat? I hope you mean that. Otherwise expect a beating to come at any point in the near future.

fuck your magical ideation of genetics, go to college, get a degree in MCB, and then we'll talk
>> Anonymous
>>78761
People competing at the highest level of their sports tend to already have genes that are beneficial for it. Take your MCB and shove it up your ass if you say this is totally false.

yeah you're pretty much fucked in gymnastics if you aren't short

fine, if you actually care to listen...
it's not a magical process of people with swimmer genes become swimmers.

if a person pursues X seriously, some traits will change as part of the nature of X (not at all linked to genetics, except in how quickly (if at all) the changes come about)

all genetics do is put a wall on growth in a given area, having genes that support X doesn't mean side-affects of X will come about.

swimmers get the way they do because it is most efficient for swimming, they lift weights (thus accounting for the somewhat large size of their muscles), but avoid an extremely low BF%... their shoulders typically appear broad because their deltoids get a lot of use

now shut up or get your ass off my /fit/

So my bones will actually lengthen if I swim enough?

So exactly what the fuck does change you condescending faggot? Share your knowledge since this is /fit/, after all.
>> Anonymous
>>78792
big deltoids = apparently broad shoulders

diet and exercise that encourage some muscle growth while maintaining a relatively high BF% for an athlete = swimmers physique

Swimming fails at building muscle mass. Gulp down protein and carbs since you are skinny and lift as much and as often as your body will allow you to.
>> Anonymous
>>78795
The shoulders of swimmers, while not that bulky, are excessively broad. Probably as broad as a bodybuilder's, although bodybuilders have a lot more hypertrophy in their deltoids than any swimmer.

So if in the end, doesn't it still come down to the swimmer's frame?
>> Anonymous
>>78799
fuck if i know, i give up
>> Anonymous
>>78802
actually wait... i have a plan... we vivisect a sufficient population of swimmers and bodybuilders... then we have a definitive answer
>> Anonymous
it would appear that i've killed the thread with my proposal
>> Anonymous
>>78799
Wouldn't that imply that an unusually large proportion of people with a naturally broad-shouldered frame become swimmers?
>> Anonymous
>>78825
Not many people from any part of the population will become an elite swimmer, but I'm willing to bet all that do were born with a frame suited to swimming. I can't imagine someone with a naturally small frame and small hands/feet breaking any swimming world records.

Swimming doesn't build muscle mass. You're in the fucking water.... this is why fish is all white meat.

If you want muscles go to the gym.
>> Anonymous
>>78834
PROTIP - good swimmers *do* go to the gym
>> Anonymous
I've been swimming hard for 5 months and I noticed a significant growth in my lats and pecs.
By swimming hard I mean 2000 meters in 45 minutes no rest, 4 times a week.

i hate these stupid bullshit gene threads.
YES some genes are beneficial.
YES some people have a "disadvantage" over some people if their genes do not fit the criteria for certain sports
but NO, it doesn't all come down to gene's,a percentage of it does, but it usually comes down to determination and passion.
