Been posting here for a while and i'd like peoples opinions. When i started out i was 5'10, 280lb, i am now 236lb. I am aiming for 190lb as my ideal target weight, then re-adjusting my body depending on its condition.

I'm not an idiot, i know this is quite a target to reach and i dont expect to be there until October, then build stamina and strength.

Ultimately i want to be in condition to apply for the British Army. I have spent pretty much every day since i started thinking about it and using it as my motivation, but there is a snag..

If i pass the initial selection which consists of tests and physical tests, which i presume cant be too punishing as the idea of the training is to get you into the best shape possible.

Has anyone ever went through/done something similar to the 42 week training they carry out? I would really like to know if anyone has experience on this and tell me what level of condition my body needs to be in when i start. Watching the video's i seen they are doing quite punishing workouts, but i guess this is built up, as i doubt they would land it on your face the day you arrive.

Opinions strongly welcome.

run run run body weigh body weight body weight. When you start you should be of average fitness. While you start you shut the fuck up and do what they tell you, not thinking = win.

I have no problem with that. I get the feeling its going to be brutal physically, emotionally and psychologically. I agree with it however, take a person, break him down and rebuild him.

Average fitness? Once i drop the weight and a month of pure fitness training would be enough? I'd like to have an edge over everyone before i join so i'm not last every time getting screamed at until i quit.

you can do your own version of the army fit test to see how you compare.

Do a 1.5 mile run and time it. I think the absolute time limit is 14 mins. unless its paras, who have to do it in something like 9.

Also you have to do a lot of press ups and quite a few pull ups.

I'll have no problem with doing countless pushups and pullups, i like doing them mostly, though i cant manage many pushups at my weight right now.

As for running 1.5 miles, i'll need to get to the gym and try it out when im about 200lb and see how far i need to go.

Info i forgot to post - I'm 18, (will be 19 when i reach target weight) and aiming for combat infantry.

I'm also a fattie (1m68, 84kg) who uses his dream of joining the Belgian army as motivation. If I keep at it, I should definitely be in shape by early 2009.

What are you aiming for exactly, OP?

You get blasted (and I mean fucked up hill and down dale) for the 3 days you do tests.

Fuck off with the weights and just do bodyweight exercises and long distance running. Try and get yourself some heavy boots and a pack you can fill with weight.

I failed the Royal Marines' officer's trials the first time because I was too bulky and not cardio-fit enough.

Sup OP, I'm doing the same thing in Amerikkka, but I'm going for pararescue.
I'm on an a training program atm that has me ramp up from 2 miles 3 times a week up to 6 miles five times a week, not to mention swimming almost every day an doing 400 pushups/500 situps/60 pullups a day. It's daunting at first, but the key is to take it in step.
If you can take it one week at a time and motivate yourself, you're golden. While I'm running and feeling like shit, I just think about the best part of my training- I'll be so fit before Basic that I'll have to do extra exercise just to stay in shape while AT Basic.

Oh, and for your question on how it starts out, week one and two look like this:
Week 1,2 - 2 mi run, 8:30 mile pace, M/W/F
Week 1-4x15 pushups/4x20 situps/3x3 pull ups
Week 2-5x20 push ups/5x20 sit ups/3x3 pull ups
Week 1,2- 15 minute continuous swim, if you can't swim, bike twice as long.
Good luck, OP. The main problem is going to be motivation. I have posters all over my wall with cliche shit like "WORK FOR YOUR BERET" and I posted my workout schedule on my door.

Thanks for the info. I have the motivation and drive to get there by the end of the year, its just i dont want to go to the selection test and find out im in nowhere near as fit as everyone else and end up failing it.
