Ok, I've recently started working out every weekend. I've never been quite sure as to what I need to work on, my main goal is to achieve a little more muscle mass, and a six pack. Other than childish vanity, I'd also like to be fit for Aikido.

Anything advice is welcome.

its a cool martial art.

Too bad you cant find it being taught authentically anywhere outside of asia.

aikido schools can run the spectrum from being a pretty decent fighting art to being ballroom dancing

count on finding much more of the latter.

ok, so its actually not unlike most other MAs, though i implore you to take judo instead. its more likely to find a good judo school rather than a good aikido school. but who knows maybe you have a good school, maybe not. an easy way to tell is what the class does more of, sparring or breathing "techniques".

Yeah, I was going to say that Judo would get him in shape for Aikido. And I love Aikido.

All you haters should remember that there are reasons for doing MA besides being a good fighter....

Thing is, the Aikido school in the area is tought by the bald guy from the second Ninja Turtles movie (Obata Kaiso). They also teach Shinkendo, which I'm also interested in. He seems to run a tight ship in Shinkendo, but I haven't seen any Aikido practice.

To be a martial artist, one must be more than a fighter, but one must at least be a fighter.

Aikido RARELY if EVER produces decent fighters. The skill it requires is TOO high for much of ANYONE to pull off effectively against resisting opponents. While it may be great for the random drunken brawl if you're not already completely smashed, it's not going to save you if you don't know the other prerequisites.

O-sensei was a black belt in Judo if I remember correctly, and I would suggest that anyone who wants to try Aikido first fill that requirement.

Achieve more muscle mass = hypertrophy. That means medium high load + short rest intervals.

Ie: If your 1repmax for the declined dumbbell press is 100lbs, then do 5 or 6 sets of 8, at 60-70% load, with a minute rest interval in between. In this case, work until you feel like dying from exhaustion, to exhaust your energy stores so your body reacts by building up.

I don't know what Akidido is about, but if it's striking, you'd want to work on your waist so you can torque some power into your punches/kicks.
