Well the best thing to do for getting used to riding a bicycle, especially ones with a mutigear system is to find a nice big empty parking lot and just ride about, get used to the balance of the bike, the type of maneuvers you can make, cycling throung the gears and finding the appropiate ones, practicing gently using the brakes.
By the way how fat are you? Because yes you can be too fat for a bicycle(and the bike can break under too much weight).
