Hey /fit/,

Is it true that doing pull-ups will make your lats wider, and rows will make your lats thicker? Lol I heard some meatheads in Gold's explaining this to some fat guy trying to do pull-ups.

Everything you hear or see in Gold's gym is a lie.

Chest exercises are what make you look thicker from the side

rows stimulate the trapezius, and rear deltoid fibers more, pullups focus more on the lats and the teres major.

both exercises train your whole back, but generally yes, vertical pulling = width, horizontal pulling = thickness.

but both types of pulling will do both

Can I replace rows with an exercise I'd be comfortable doing in prison?

Not if you want thicker lats you can't. You're just going to have to take it like a man.

you can do cable rows, heavy db rows, barbell rows, bodyrows (like a reverse pushup from a bar). deadlifts will thicken your back nicely as well

Who gives a shit? Just do them both.

they work both lats and biceps

it depends on your grip, first of all. close grip will work your arms more. wide grip will work your lats more. neither one can make your lats 'thicker' vs 'wider'...that idea doesn't even make fucking sense.

rows are awesome for lats, if you have proper form. i used to do cable and bent over barbell rows, but saw the most gains doing dumbell rows (one knee propped on a bench).

it's actually a common misconception that a wide grip hits the lats more, a chinup grip will hit the lats more than a wide grip pullup. what you are hitting in a wide grip is the teres major
