Alright, mis/fit/s. ITT: Healthy late-night snacks.

I've decided I'm going to lose weight (currently 6'4", 250 lbs @ 21 years old), so first things first is limiting snacking and pop. I figure if I can't keep myself from snacking at night entirely, I'll make them healthy snacks.

Tonight: celery and chunky peaanut butter, and a glass of high pulp OJ.

Get some type of low-fat Casein into your body to burn while you sleep.

Skim Milk or low-fat fat cottage cheese, with some type of healthy fat, is a nice pre-sleep meal.

Save the Peanut Butter for breakfast.

Have a spoonful of malt extract when you eat your midnight snack to help with digestion while you sleep. The only reason why snacking late at night is bad is because you don't digest food properly during your sleep.

Plus if it doesn't help much then you'll start associating the shitty taste of malt extract with midnight snacks and hopefully you'll stop :D

Since nobody's said why yet: sugar isn't great for late-night snacking. It hinders you ability to fall asleep shortly thereafter, and what sugar you don't burn before going to sleep will get turned into fat.

So please, please: skip the OJ.

dont eat midnight snacks, EVER! late night snacking is more likely to get you to gain weight because a normal person digestive system slows down after about 7 PM or so.

if you must have one though, eat like two Triskets (not three, TWO!) and a glass of water. or at the most a glass of skim milk by itself.

im not in the greatest shape, but when i cut out soda, eating after 7 PM and upped my fencing schedule from two nights a week to five nights, i lost 42 pounds in three months and thats all i had to fucking do.

Do not eat carbs.

Carbs are your body's primary food source of energy.

If you don't need that energy (like when you're going to laying down for the next 8 hours), it's going to be stored as fat.

There. Armed with this info, go out and consume protein and non-animal fat before bed. Cottage cheese is the best thing I can suggest. I use Vega, a vegan protein shake before bed because I don't do well on dairy. It's expensive though. You could always just have a chicken breast or even a piece of lean steak. Believe it or not, a small very lean steak is a better choice for a late night meal than a dozen triscuits.

Shut the fuck up.

You need to keep your body constantly fed, else it will reach a mode of catabolization, and your body will begin feeding on it's muscle. The last thing you want to do when cutting weight is to catabolize, since muscle mass in itself uses up calories at rest. If you fuck over your body, it'll fuck you right back.

Like the man above me said, Cottage Cheese is perfect.

And cut out all the fucking juice, pop, everything. Just drink water.

eating a fucking sandwich at 2AM isn't something that your body prepares for. digestion slows down when you are asleep or should naturally be asleep.

and yes, cutting out all sugary drinks in general would be beneficial. chips and any kind of chocolate should be cut out too.

Yeah, dude, from that, and the fact that you lost that much weight in such a small amount of time, tells me that you are eating entirely too little, and burning off muscle. Human beings do not lose 42 pounds of fat in three months. I wouldn't be shocked if more than half of that was muscle.

Digestion has absolutely no play in the subject, when you consider that eating a slow-absorbing meal before bed will allow it to slowly digest all night, keeping your body fed, not allowing your metabolism to weird out, and allowing you to wake up in the morning with more energy.

i used to be a super-fatass...then i started fencing and downgraded to a fatass. then i stopped drinking soda, candy and chips every FUCKING day, stopped eating after 7PM, started eating healthy more filling meals three times a day instead of junkfood all day and upped my fencing from two to five nights a week.

i didnt not eat like some anorexic teen girl. i ate the right things at the right times and exercised more.

I understand what you experienced entirely.

I'm telling you, that underneath all of that chub, was a layer of muscle. There is a reason that ridiculously fat people will sometimes appear to have strength, since eating such a huge calorie surplus will put some muscle on, which is hidden by all the fat.

I'm saying that your body ate that muscle, while it ate the fat on top. You didn't notice it, but once you hit a plateau, you'll be stuck with no muscle, but still a layer of moderate fat that will be practically impossible to burn off from the lack of muscle mass.

I experienced it, I'm just trying to warn you before hand.

And six meals a day would help the metabolism more than three.

Actually the complete opposite, I would imagine an activity like Fencing would be lacking in actual resistance training, and more like a form of cardio. Such long bouts of it, or any type of cardio, also catabolizes muscle.

You'd note that if you look at cross-country runners, in comparison to say sprinters, the runners almost always will have a much lower amount of muscle mass. That isn't from them eating less, or not wanting to be muscular, it's simply that it's nearly impossible to retain muscle while doing such activity, without eating a shit-load of food. Even then, that might not save it.

The only way to retain muscle while cutting weight is hard resistance training (or steroids). This is why bodybuilders tend to shy away from cardio, and instead manipulate their diets. The muscle they have burns up so many calories, they don't even need to perform cardio. Some of them, anyway.

fencing works your muscles in you legs and lower back. do a squat, come halfway up and stay there while moving around for nine minutes while trying to evade someone who is trying to stab you with a three foot sword.

the drilling that we do is usually assited by wights. i have to hold a 40 pound plate in my hands do an advance, squat all the way down. come back up to engarde position, and repeat until my instructor says im good. then we have to do 'follow me's' which are great. he'rs a sample

hold a kilogram wight in your hand and hold it out at arms length then move it around and paryr other peoples fists (who are trying to punch you) using finesse and not using it like a hammer and thats basically epee

fencing requires strength. but not a HEY BRA I CAN BENCH 350! kind of strength.

the truth is. epee fencers throw punches on the strip. bellgaurd each other in the face and aim for the balls more than occasionally.

back to my weight. im still a minor fatass with a moderate paunch becasue i dont do crunches or any ab work out at all.... my arms are in great shape as far as endurance goes and women have complimented me on my ass more than a few times.

one of the female instructors told me that im getting the so called "fencers ass"

i still dont have very long running endurance though simply because fencing alone balances strength and cardio while not being particularly demanding in either one. and i tend not to run more than like half a mile for a warmup jog
