Squats work a LARGER MUSCLE VOLUME through a LARGER RANGE OF MOTION than deadlifts: i.e., you do more work for each rep, which releases more hormones and other muscle-building goodness that circulates through your whole body. That's why EVERY basic strength program is based on SQUATZ - rep for rep, they are simply the best way you can spend time in the gym.
This is not to say that deadlifts are unimportant, they are VERY important, and should be a part of every program - they just have different effects than squats to and are used for a different purpose...
