The very best cardio one can do.
>> Anonymous
>>326256
Nah not really. When you're in the water you only have to lift 5% or something of your body weight.
>> Anonymous
Mom said I can't get wet.
>> Anonymous
I have some problems with my ankles so I usually swim instead of running for cardio.
>> Anonymous
>>326262
That's why it's awesome: little joint stress while providing a full-body workout.

Yes, you only have to lift 5% of your weight, but you have to work against the water in order to propel yourself forward.
>> Anonymous
>>326270

yeah it uses like 75% of your bodies muscles in conjunction depending on type of stroke and technique.

apparently hill walking with two sticks like ski poles uses more. but seriously, fuck that.

Fun
Not good for losing weight
Good cardio, you'll definately get strength/endurance gains
Hard to find room in a lap pool during prime hours.

>>Not good for losing weight

Are you fucking kidding. If you push yourself, you'll burn through calories fast as hell. There's a reason there are no fat waterpolo players/swimmers.
>> Anonymous
Aside from the fact that I hate public pools and have no faith in their condition of cleanliness, I love swimming, good cardio and damn fun.

Yeah, but have you ever tried swimming to lose weight? I have, it doesn't work so well, and I swim competitively.. The reason is because you'll feel extremely hungry after an extended period in the water. Some people think this is because of body heat lost in the water, and your body is trying to tell you to eat to regain lost heat. But yes, it burns a lot of calories, but you'll probably binge later on and waste all that work. It's great for maintaining weight or building lean muscle, though.

>>326346
>building lean muscle

This leads to the loss of fat.
>> Anonymous
Loss of fat =\= loss of weight.
>> Anonymous
>>326359
Yeah, because what we all want is to lose muscle in order to drop our weight, amirite?

Didn't they say that Phelps eats like 10,000+ calories A DAY?

>>Yeah, but have you ever tried swimming to lose weight? I have, it doesn't work so well, and I swim competitively.

I've been playing waterpolo for seven years, and it works just fine whenever I need to get back in shape.

Anyone that's binging isn't working out properly to begin with, so they'd be fucking it up no matter what exercise they were doing.

Swimming is essentially non-impact, works almost every muscle group, tears through calories, and gets you tanned for the ladies. What's not to like?

I think it was 20,000.

By weight, I mean body fat %. Swimmers tend to have more body fat than other athletes, such as sprinters. Most competitive swimmers eat 3000+ calories a day since they burn through so many calories. Unless you're Michael Phelps and have a personal nutritionist, and are on a controlled diet, it's hard to create a diet that will help you lose body fat while swimming. It's much easier to cut a few hundred calories and run a few miles a day.

12,000.

God damn his body is awkward.

Yeah, that's why I googled/yahoo answered it. Plenty of people experience the same thing. Here's a source
http://www.lehighsports.com/assets/sportsmed/Swimmers.pdf
Fueling Your Sport
Swimmers burn a lot of calories in their sport, but they
often have more body fat than other athletes. This may be
because swimmers are often very hungry after many
hours in the pool. They may eat more than other athletes,
who usually don’t feel hungry after being active

>They may eat more than other athletes, who usually don’t feel hungry after being active

Oh, fuck that noise. I don't know about you guys, but after football practice back in high school and lifting now, I get fucking ravenous.

>>326346
Just because you have poor nutrition timing skillz and no diet discipline doesn't mean others are not capable of losing weight via swimming.

>>326392
Phelps isn't on a diet. He eats whatever he wants to get the 10k of calories he needs to sustain 6 hours of exercise a day. I'm sure his nutritional consultant and coach have emphasized eating hearty and skipping the shit.

>>326402
Phelps's body has been extremely fine tuned to perform a particular action -- swimming. Humans are meant to walk upright on land, thus his honed physique is certainly not "normal".
>> Anonymous
>>326424
I don't know... It might be that because I played RB and Midi @ Lax that I didn't get hundry.

My coach made us run 5 miles AFTER the sprints. Running + eating = my stomach screaming FUCK YOU!

Everyone read this twice. Swimming = some of the best cardio, but people lose weight less rapidly than other types of cardio. To lazy for sauce. Google it yourself.

>Phelps isn't on a diet.
Diet = / = Losing Weight.

Diet-The food and beverage a person or animal consumes; A controlled regimen of food and drink, as to gain or lose weight or otherwise influence health

Dude eats pizza and burgers like crazy, you motherfucker. Who ever used the word deficit here?
>> Anonymous
I went swimming for the first time in years today. Really fucking hard, and I couldn't do any strokes very well, apart from 'skulling' or whatever the fuck it's called.
>> Anonymous
Phelps diet is very controlled. He needs lots of carbs (primary energy source for swimmers and other cardio sports as well), different types of fats, sugars, proteins, and calories. He also cross trains with weights after his 4+ hours of swimming on some days. I can tell you Phelps didnt' randomly start plowing down pizzas and burgers because he thought he could. The nutritionist created a diet plan for him and he followed it.

bump for more about swimming and less about Phelps

builds muscle and great cardio. probably the perfect exercise imo

I always thought it was the cold that made you store fat for insulation. I thought that was the reason why female swimmers are such fatties.
>> Anonymous
>>326588
partly true, people do store fat when exposed to colder temperatures but i think you would have to be exposed for quite some time for it to equal any measurable fat gain.

No. It's due to females having shitty diets. I.E., eating pizza and french fries and soda at school

I did competitive swimming in high school. Damn fine exercise, but it gave me huge shoulders and upper legs that look odd on someone as short and wide as I.

swimming is also good for your back

Its pretty decent and I would do it more but everytime I go to my local pool the laplane is full of fucking 40 year olds who are so FUCKING IGNORANT that they are swimming far too slow to warrant using the lap lane. I used to swim for a team so I end up having to lap them like every fucking 4 lengths. Shits annoying.

Thats why I took up HIIT instead.
>> Anonymous
>>327934
I go to my local pool about 7 every morning. shit's fucking empty so I can unleash maximum power on the whole pool. you can also do hiit in the pool if it's empty.
>> Anonymous
>>327940
Yeah I was thinking about going earlier. Is swimming any good for HIIT?

And I still can't get over how much the slowfags make me rage in the pool. I got someguy tell me to "slow down" a few months back.
>> Anonymous
>>327946
Lol whut. He should just dick around in the shallow end then if he wants slow.
>> Anonymous

lol what a faggot. and yeah HIIT is good swimming though dosen't seem as tiring as running
