I've been thinking about getting a YMCA membership. Working out is good and all but it's pretty boring. However, like many other 4channers, I absolutely suck at sports. Likely due to an entire childhood of inactivity. The only thing I'm somewhat mediocre at is badminton (which is hardly a sport IMO). Would it be a good idea to convince my nerd friends to get memberships with me and play with them, slowly working my way up? Or should I just keep working out instead?

Working out is only as boring as you make it. What are you going to do at a YMCA? Don't you have a basketball court somewhere thats free? If you want to get stronger, you'll need to lift serious weights. If you want to get better at sports, than just find some friends and play. Don't worry about looking bad at whatever sport you're playing, if you have real friends than they don't care. It's your call, do what you want, Just get out there and do it.

The YMCA where I workout has monitors on the elliptical machines. It's fucking sweet, I can watch whatever I want as I do cardio. I got to watch MMA last time, so it wasn't boring. But the commercials fucking kill my motivation, and changing the station always makes me exhausted

The monitors are on the machines, and the controls are the same ones that increase the incline.

I get spent when I have to reach into my pocket to change songs on my ipod. Hell, I get spent when I'm just looking at my ipod scrolling through the artists. If my attention is on anything other than my music, or what I'm watching, it makes it much harder to keep my energy up. And I'm on the machine for a long time, so I can't afford any drop in energy

you should lift weights

Ah, you have a good mindset. Try more sports, after some practice and a learning curve (no one gets good at sports overnight) you'll find something you'll definitely be good at. It definitely helps if it's a sport you enjoy, so you are motivated to compete.

IE I never got in tune with playing most sports, until I discovered the joy of kickboxing. You are bad at it but you start getting determined to train. You start hungering for it, and start practicing hard.
