Hay /fit/

i was thinking of starting to run every morning. but when i wake up early my stomach is empty and i wonder if i should eat something before running or should i wait until after running?
also, what do you guys think about high intensity interval training?

I have heard (can't confirm) that running before drinking/eating anything in the morning is most efficient for getting your metabolism going and burning calories all day.

I run 5 miles 3x a week in the morning before I do anything. Sometimes I have a drink of water though.

If you're considering doing HIIT then do not eat anything before it or at least half an hour after it on mornings.
>> Anonymous
just hydrate the night before and you should be fine. your piss better be nice and clear.

have your breakfast after you run

is there something specific i should eat after running, to replenish stuff and whatnot?

whats a good breakfast for a runner?

nothing heavy. i think fruits like apples and bananas might be a good choice

Something with a bit of sugar is probably a good idea. Passing out isn't healthy.

Run before eating, and then eat some protien straight after for the best results. Low fat bacon is good, you can get it with like 70 calories per rash.

I've read that early morning fasted cardio can be as much as 300% more effective (take that with a grain of salt). The pro-fasted argument says that:

1. After an overnight 8-12 hour fast, your body's stores of glycogen are depleted and you
burn more fat when glycogen is low.

2. Eating causes a release of insulin. Insulin interferes with the mobilization of body fat.
Less insulin is present in the morning; so more body fat is burned when cardio is done in
the morning.

3. There is less carbohydrate (glucose) in the bloodstream when you wake up after an
overnight fast. With less glucose available, you burn more fat.

4. If you eat immediately before a workout, you have to burn off what you just ate first
before tapping into stored body fat (and insulin is elevated after a meal.)

5. It makes you feel fucking awesome for the rest of the day. Srsly. Run a few miles or do 30 minutes of HIIT and you'll feel like the goddamn Batman for the rest of the day.

If you exersize on an empty stomach you force your body to burn fat instead of food - if you run more than about a mile when you are not used to running you will probably feint (i did in a gym lol.)

Personally i think running or jogging is the worst form of exersize you can do, because its very high impact and will screw up your knees if you do it for too long - walking or even cycling is a better way as they will not do any serious damage to your knees and/or hamstrings.

A big tip is drink lots and lots of water, and especially before you eat anything in the morning as that will really boost your metabolism - you will need to piss a lot but in the long run you will lose a lot.

wake up, drink water, run

do not eat anything

the water is to hydrate yourself before the run

you shouldn't eat anything because when you exrcise, your body goes to burn glycogen first for energy

when you wake up you don't really have any in your body from the previous day (having used it all up already)

if you eat, you're going to have glycogen to burn

if you don't have glycogen in yoru body, your body goes to burn fat stores

so if you run before eating breakfast, you'll start burning directly from your fat stores, more or less

so running in the early am is the best way to lower your body fat

i did it last year (15 min run at 630am before classes) for a semester, ate whatever the fuck I wanted to all semester, and stayed the same weight (that means i ate pizza and wendy's and other horrible stuff for my body and didn't get fatter)

>you shouldn't eat anything because when you exrcise, your body goes to burn glycogen first for energy

so is this true for running AND exercising?

for weightlifting, the general rule is to not eat anything too haeavy 1hr-30 min prior to your workout.

i do H.I.I.T every day for 30 minutes is great to do if your looking on getting lean. And i always exercise on a empty stomach because this makes your body use fat for energy instead of the food in your stomach

it's true for everything.
Your liver works like a battery, storing glycogen.
Battery empty = fat is burned.
>> Anonymous
however running with an empty stomach can cause you to lose muscle along with fat
>> Anonymous
Wait, so if your not trying to burn fat, you can eat something?

if you run on a full stomach, your body will use the food's energy instead of the energy stored in liver/muscles.
If you eat enough during exercise, you won't lose weight.

I've heard a lot from both sides, and the whole "running on an empty stomach burns more fat" argument is rather inconclusive all around. For me, I noticed that I did thin down a little more when I ran on empty stomach, but some of it also seemed to be a fair bit of muscle loss (barely noticeable though). The weight loss difference was honestly barely noticeable when compared to running after eating, but my ability to run harder and faster after eating was definitely dramatic. I can probably run nearly twice as much after I ate something as opposed to having not eaten something, but this shouldn't be an issue if you aren't concerned about athletics and are just concerned with losing weight. A 30-minute jog on empty would probably be good, but anything past that is probably a bad idea.

I do know that high-intensity cardio (ex. sprints) on an empty stomach can cause some considerable muscle loss, but you'll lose fat too (if you ask me, the trade-off is far from worth it compared to low-intensity cardio on empty)

yes

depends on how much you eat
