Dawkins has some good explanations for the evolutionary origins of altruism in The God Delusion.
It can be seen as, for example, an outgrowth of a cost-benefit analysis (only a little bad for me, but very good for my genetically-related group) or as a form of 'peacocking' i.e. "check me out ladies, i can afford to give my own food to others because i'm a superior hunter' etc.
