Alternative Squat Exercise Anonymous
I had a slight cartilage tear from playing basketball over the summer. The doctor suggested I lay of the SQUATZ for a month or two. I stopped squatting, and my knee seemed better, however I was recently in an 8+ hour car ride that seemed to really cause inflammation in my knee. I thought it had gone away, but when I did squats today I felt the slight dull pain. I want to give squats a break while I recover. Anyone know/recommend of any good exercises I can do that are low impact on my knees? Doctor recommend swimming/eliptical.

I miss squats already :(

That dull ache in your knee will never go away, I have the same thing. Expect it to swell up seemingly at random every couple of years.

Yeah, I know what you mean. My knee really swells the morning usually of a day it's supposed to rain. Always heard of people predicting rain because of their joints, never thought anything of it until I noticed it happening pretty regularly. Humidity really fucks with it.

Do AIR SQUATZ, your doctor doesn't know a fucking thing.

sets/reps?

It really depends on your current /fit/ness level, but with air squatz you want to be shooting for higher reps. Since you're hurt, the training is different than if you were healthy. I'd say 3 sets of 25 reps MWF would be a good start, so play it by ear after that. And it's imperative that you keep form tight at all times, once you move up in reps there's a tendency for the squat form to deteriorate.

I have small degrees of pain (not as the result of an injury) in my knees too when I run/squat. What has made a *world* of difference, though, is fish oil. Get around 2 grams of DHA/EPA in your system every day and you'll almost certainly curb the pain.

Don't just grab the first 1,200mg dose of fish oil off the shelf, though. Look at the dosage of EPA/DHA on the label -- if it isn't at least 60% of the total serving size, find a better pill.
