I'm interested in taking up muay thai and I know there are some martial artists on /fit/. For the people who have actually taken it, what do you think of it?
>> Anonymous
I'd also like to know this!

HAH B-B-BUMP!

you won't do tony jaa stunt with muay thay class
he has taken kung-fu and tae kwon do before muay boran

muay thai is straight "fight effectiveness" you might learn some flashy kick but that'll be rare

I've been taking it for about 3 years now, and it's not at all like Tony Jass's stunts ( i hope you were kidding :3 ). It is a pretty effective martial art, and it will definitely tire you out. Not much else to say besides take a few classes and see for yourself if you like it.

An actual Thai fighters regimen would probably kill you dead in your tracks.

Taking a thai kickboxing class or two a week would be a pretty good work out, but you will not look like tony jaa without lots of supplemental work.

OP here,
my main goal is to learn how to fight rather then being toned (for the lack fo a better word) and as 3 of you have said it is. Can you tell me a little more about it?

Sorry, I forgot to add, is there anything particular I should look for when I pick out a gym that teaches it?

Full contact sparring is an absolute must.

This a thousand time over.

No fighting style is is worth anything if you cant put it into action when someone is hitting you with real force in the face.
TKD, Karate (some exceptions), hell, even BJJ are somewhat crippled because most of the time there is no full contact sparring.

Everybody has a plan going into a fight. It usually flies out the window when you hit them really had in the face. This applies to you, too.

Muai Thai is a great striking art but it ends there. In the real world you must master three things to be capable in fighting someone effectively. Strike. Take Down. Ground game. Muai Thai satisfies one aspect. Understand and respect that.

wtf are you talking about. Most bjj schools are not "self defense" schools, but rather sports/competition schools. Grappling with a fully resisting opponent=full contact

Dude, i took a shitty MMA class at a shitty MMA school for long enough to know that it was quite shitty. But i loved whenever some BBJ dude would pull me into his guard. I would just get a half-assed base, and then pound on their face.

Usually to flabbergasted to do anything until the 3 hit or so.

When someone hits you in the face, repeatedly, your are not thinking about getting them in an armbar.

Just hurry up and go faggot, you'll learn more there, than on here.

Aikido and original Jujitsu was designed to take down a fully armed Samurai WITHOUT weapons. BUT it is not a striking art, combine the two and...

PROFIT?!

Kyoshin Karate has body hardening drills, where you basically hit each other in nerve clusters to deaden your bodies ability to register pain.

You could try that.

It was a great workout and really fun and you learn how to strike/clinch.

You will learn how to punch and throw killing knees. You will learn how to fight better, definitely ( Unless you weigh around 300+ pounds then you should just juggernaut all over your opponents )

jkd is probably the most effective thing to learn because you can apply it almost immediately

Your shins will tell you to stop but you can't. It's a brutal art. I've ended real world street fights with leg kicks elbows and knees. It's not a pussy art like TKD or some shit. If your looking for a school look for an honest to goodness certification.

Really OP? Really?

In Muay Thai, honest to goodness certification means the coach has a number of competitive fighters, or is/was a fighter himself.

Enjoy pointlessly smashing your shins into your opponents for 3 days a week.

Who ever thought this "martial art form" up is an idiot.

Is your point that it's better to kick with some other part of your leg or that kicking is useless? You do know that you actaully use your hands knees and elbows too in mt?

I think he's under the impression that kicking with the shin is a bad thing, even though the shin is far more resilient than the foot is.
