>Why do we put more effort into "fixing" those who eat too little, than those who eat too much?
We don't. Have a look at the trillion dollar fitness industry and the constant gimmick pills and equipment you see advertised after midnight. The thing is, it's just more common for an ana to become 75 pounds and be in dire need of care than it is for an overeater to become 600+ pounds and in dire need of care. The thing with ana/bulimia is that you lose weight extremely fast, whereas with binge eating it takes at least a couple of years, though I've heard of some people who gain over 150 pounds per year. It honestly takes a while to put on enough weight to become morbidly obese and the body is more resilient to weight gain than weight loss in terms of maintaining health.
All of that aside, they're both pretty serious conditions, but first must be properly diagnosed. Like I said, someone doesn't have a compulsive overeating disorder if all they do is eat POORLY, but in typical portions, just like someone isn't ana if all they did was crash diet for a month or two.
The big problem is that ignorant people think "will power" can fix anything, yet they've never been in such severe situations such as food/starvation addiction, nicotine addiction, hard drug addiction, self-injury addiction, etc. These things take fucking years and a lot of therapy to fully conquer, but they're a joke to the little upper middle class suburban white kids who populate most of the Internet and have no life experience outside of a 50 mile radius of their home town. And, yes, it makes me rage, because I know how hard my best friend struggles with beating her overeating disorder...she abuses food like alcoholics abuse whiskey or beer. Watched her sit in tears and eat 43 cup cakes in one sitting out of 60 that she bought, and she ate the other 17 an hour later.
