sup /fit/,

i need some HIIT advice. i run for 30 minutes at the gym about 4-5 times a week, and i'd like to try out HIIT on the treadmill.

i was reading this article http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/richb3.htm
and for a beginner they suggest

"15 minutes at whatever you consider a moderate pace, you should be able to talk in short bursts, but not carry on a normal conversation. As soon as the 15 minutes are up, you take off as fast and furiously as you can for a 60 seconds. When the 60 seconds are up, walk for another 60 seconds, and then take off again. Do this five times."

i think that sounds find and dandy, and i'll try that out.

but i've noticed lots of people on /fit/ say they only do HIIT for 15 minutes? i'm not saying i'd rather do the shorter time, i'm just asking if the method described above in the article isn't as effective? i'd rather run 30 minutes than 15.

HIIT doesn't work well on a treadmill. Do it outside, and if not that, then on a track.

HIIT works better the longer you do it naturally. Perhaps your site is meant for extreme beginners?

Check these as well. They may help.

HIIT on treadmills sucks. They aren't explosive enough. You need to be able to go from active rest to full exertion. That said, I see nothing wrong with doing HIIT on a stationary bike, recumbike, or elliptical if you are adamant on not running outside.

I generally do 30:60 cycles for 10 minutes, but I'm sure there'll be a dozen anons who'll call me a pussy for that.

HIIT on treadmills suck because you tend to have to amp up the level manually which gives you time to go from a walk to a jog to a run isntead of a walk-burst run.

I do my cycles at 30:30 for a total of 20 minutes (5 min warm up/cool down)

i can do running outdoors.. how do you guys time yourself? do you just kinda wing it/count in your head or do you use a stop watch or something?

wrist watch chronograph. they aren't that expensive.

Also, if you can go outside, see if you can find a big hill. Do HIIT bursts up that (for the "rest" you can jog down). That will really kick the crap out of you.
