WTF!

i want to learn for the run of it, and as a way of keeping fit, not for protection

what's your goal? fitness? defense? hobby?

i recommend a martial art that teaches the basics of stances, distance. then depending on your goals you might want a lot of sparring, flexible and realistic fighting routines, fun cardio..

Kick boxing/thai boxing

do thai boxing and or brazillian jiu jitsu. I goto a place everyday that teaches both for mixed martial arts people and I love it.

I'd recommend kickboxing, since kickboxing is badass, whereas Tae Bo is ridiculous and has absolutely zero applicability to anything except cardiovascular exercise.

taeboe LOL
its not martial
its not an art... its just dangerous-looking aerobics

try capoeira, its fun and a good way of keeping you fit

OP here

i have one concern

the old, being mocked thing, you know not fitting in, i mean im really rather shy, and i know id end up worrying about what would happen

does anyone have any tips, or maybe stories of your first days at gyms etc.

Get the fuck over it. If you don't, not only will you be a failure at the martial art, but you'll also be a failure at life in general.

no

You're not going to get mocked as long as you're respectful to other people. Everybody starts from somewhere and the higher ranked students and instructor all know that and will help you accordingly.

You have virtually nothing to worry about.

Find a gym that's not full of colossal faggots. I went to about 4 before I found one that wasn't full of just buff dudes mean mugging everyone else in the room. Surely one near you has some friendly people in it.

Tae Kwon Do is a lot of fun and very good for you. I'm a TKD instructor and the best advice I can give you is to shop around. TKD has been growing pretty fast in America, and while that is good, it also means an increase in shitty schools.

If what you say is true, the wu-tang and the shoalin could be dangerous together, En Guard, Try your Wu-tang sword against me

It depends on what you want out of your training. There are 3 major goals you can pursue:

Leisure/Fitness
Competitive Fighting
Practical Fighting

If you're looking to just get in shape and have a good time, I recommend Capoeira, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, or any other specialty art that doesn't have an emphasis on training specifically for a competitive environment or defending yourself. I personally train Capoeira, and I love it. It's not that practical compared to other arts, and you don't train it to go and compete, but I have an awesome time with it.

If you want to do competitive fighting, get into boxing, sport Tae Kwon Do (look for the right school), Muay Thai, or any art that trains specifically to fight in a sporting environment. You can either do something like Boxing, which is just straight up boxing, or you can enter the MMA arena, which involves lots of cross-training.

And for strictly self defense, a nice amount of cross-training can help. Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing, Muay Thai, Krav Maga...a lot of Police Officers and Military officials borrow techniques from many of those arts as they tend to be very effective.

Hope this helps some.
