so do these even require any strength at all? I always see these buff guys trying to get a high score on the local one in my town (it doesn't have a bell, but rings once you beat someones high score) and one day my friend (who is fat but not much muscle strength) was able to get the highest score so far which no other person can beat.

it's not him, it's gravity.

Arm strength would add to the acceleration from gravity. I don't know how much that weighs, but a 10 pound sledge takes a fair amount of strength to speed up since the weight is at the end of 2 feet of handle.

technique.
Raw strength seldom works well.

I worked in an amusement park when I was younger, and it depends on the model. Old ones that are like really simple levers are all about strength.

New ones, especially digital ones, are about technique. You need a good solid hit no matter what, but the old ones you could really force up the tower. I could do it one handed after awhile.

It's probably all about technique. Grab it two-handed, with your dominant hand near the weight and the other hand near the bottom of the handle. Swing it up over you, let your dominant hand slide down to the other hand, and let gravity do all the work. Like swinging an axe/chopping wood.
