Hay /fit/

I don't have anyone who can spot me, and since I'm rather weak currently, I'd rather not bench with the bar.

Are dumbbells just as good?
>> Anonymous
Dumbells are better in my opinion. I stopped using the Bar and started using dumbells and I've made more progress, gotten stronger, and I don't have to ask for a spot.

They work better cause your muscles have to stabilize the weight instead of depending on the bar for easier stabilization.

What he said. Even the Starting Strength guy said dumbbells were better.

Don't bench press you faggot. It's worthless.

Agreeing with other posters that dumb bells are better in the long run. Work small weights up, if you are shaking then you know that you have muscle groups that aren't ready to push that weight yet.

Ah yes; push ups.

Its actually better to do both than just dumbbels or just a bar.
>> Anonymous
honestly do both, maybe switch them up every 3 or 4 weeks. You are going to see the best gains through variations

He's afraid of dropping the bar on himself after he reaches failure, since he won't have a spotter.

Dropping the bar on bench press is no joke. Like I always say, it's one of the only lifts that can kill a healthy person.

Honestly as long as you're not maxing out, you really don't NEED a spot. I don't have a spot either because I just work out at home and have only had 1 incident where I couldn't get the bar up. The fact that I KNOW there is no one to help me actually helps in motivating me, because in theory you're fucked if you don't lift.

The 1 time I couldn't get it back up though was no big deal. Just let it sit on my chest and rolled it down my abs and stomach and sat up. Then was able to lift it up enough to get out from under it and to set it on the safety bars.

get one of those safeties on the bench.

They should be just low enough that you can lower it to touch your chest, but if you suck it in a bit you will be under the bar.

I find that's a perfect setting. And then you don't need a spotter.

I work my chest twice a week, I'll use the dumbells and go heavy (pyrimad) then later in the week i'll go light with the bar with increased reps of course

just do regular bench press. if the bar happens to land on you make sure you toss that shit to your side.

Barbell bench press is more so for power.
Dumbbell bench press is more for size, because you can get a fuller range of motion.
If you really want to add the barbell bench to your routine you can try floor presses.(picture) It's a bit safer.

If you want the effect of a bar. You have to use a bar. Just go slow. Dont due to much. I cant spot some of my bigger work out buddie. I can barily LIFT what they press.(Im talkin 450 and up). And they wont hit the bench unless someone can spot becouse they can get hurt. So can you. Make sure you have a rack above you and make sure your not overdoing it. Yes the other anons are correct. If you must...as they so elegantly put it "toss that *stuff*"

Work hard and stay fit freind.

If you can't do the exercise, lean to the side.

Or you can do what I do when I'm going to failure at home with no spotter and push against the base of the bench with my feet until I'm upright. Only works with heavy benches. I end up in something like the deadlift position.
