Sup /fit/, this might be more of a /sp/ question.... but anyway. I really want to get into rock climbing, I've been working out for over a year now, but I don't do anything with my new found strength. I've completely dominated all of the local 'climbing' walls in the area. So my question fit is.. What exercises do you recommend for this kind of activity besides, pull ups, power cleans, and the shoulder press.

pic related; and kinda hot at the same time.

Also if you know any good online communities for rock climbing that would be awesome.

Grab a towel, wrap it around a tree branch outside, and do pull ups on that.
do pull ups with just your body weight and instead of using a strong grip only do them with your fingers, not your thumb.
grab a long rope with whatever thickness you want, make sure it can support your body weight, and tie it high up in a tree, then climp up it and down it;
firstly, start off with using both arms and feet at a time, then start using just one arm but both feet supporting you, then do one arm at a time until you can reach the top in a matter of seconds. dont do any other excercise other than lifting your bodyweight up because that's what your going to be doing.
rock climbers dont say "I can bench 6785076pounds" because they dont need to be able to do that. you need a strong back and hands and good balance while ur up there with the birds

Anon to the rescue!
I've been waiting for a thread like this.
I've been climbing for...5 years now.
As far as working out goes, as a rock climber, you want the least amount of weight with the most amount of strength. This means:
running (cardio helps from getting burned out on routes)
crunches (core is one of the most widely used muscle groups in a climber's body),
pull ups (because you do it all day)
push ups(for resistance traiing. this helps getting injuries due to weak elbows and shoulders)
Don't do anything that will get you too bulky, it will interfere with your climbing.

as far as websites, tell me in what general location you're at and i MIGHT be able to point you in the right direction.

wow. totally messed ethat last part up.
*for opposition training. this helps you to AVOID injuries due to weak elbows and shoulders*

I live in Northern Delaware, but don't worry I'll be more then willing to drive for a good location. also any recommendations for shoes?

Eh. For now, rockclimbing.com is your best friend. Once your in the climbing scene start digging around, you'll find some more localized websites.
Rockford Park is where you want to be. Google it and go.
For shoes, it depends on what kind of climbing you're going to be doing (indoor, bouldering, sport climbing, traditional climbing) and your budget.

I guess bouldering, and sport climbing, I want to stay as faraway form indoor climbing as possible. and as far as my budget goes, I'll spend about 80 bucks or so. if the shoes are 'awesome' I guess I'd be willing to spend a little more.

Just curious what Anon thinks:

I've read numerous times that this type of thinking is out of kilter with current theories. Is strength training not essentially a fast version of body weight training? Aside from developing good balance does body weight excercise not essentially result in the same body that strength training would've? As far as I can tell, the only variable is how QUICKLY you gain the muscle and strength.

tl;dr body weight is for those who prefer developing balance and coordination with their workout, while weight lifting is for those that want bigger muscles asap.

To some extent, the muscular and strength limitations of bodyweight do come into play at some point, seeing it's more about weight: power ratios, where as weight training is just power and muscle, that's it.

As for your question, start trying 1h chinups, muscle ups, ALOT of weighted chinups, dunno why you'd want shoulder press\power clean aside from to develop a balanced looking physique but that hardly seems your interest.

Weighted chinups for triples, 1h chinups, muscle ups, dips and weighted dips would be my personal suggestion. Also, consider learning some ring skills (gymnastic stuff) the strength\balance\co-ordination carryover should be pretty impressive.

Assuming you're a girl (which I think you are), for ~80 bucks I would go with either Evolv Defy or Evov Rockstar. I've heard good things about both shoes. Other than that, most shoes range in the $100-130 price range so go look on ebay. You can usually find some REALLY good deals on there.

Strength training is very alike to body weight training, yes. I would only recommend it in moderation though. My best advice for climbing, is just to climb. Plain and simple. It's a lot easier, in my opinion, to climb and target all muscle groups used than to strength train or body weight train and try to target muscles used [for climbing] individually.

If your thinking about doing some climbing that doesn't involve too much heelhooking, go for the FiveTen Anasazi Slippers. $55.
I swear by FiveTen rubber.

What do you mean what am I in?

There's a shit ton of climbing to do in Georgia but for the good stuff, you have to come up to Atlanta or higher. Rocktown (bouldering), Lost Wall (trad), Zahnd(???) are up on the same mountain in LaFayette, Geogia. You can find out places near you on rockclimbing.com If you don't feel like driving that far, there's a place near Atlanta called Boat Rock that'll fuck your fingers up. Fun place though.

Pic related, it's me at Rocktown.
