I was just wondering how many of you people go to gyms and how many work out at home?

I personally dont like gyms because i dont like paying money to work out muscles i can easily work out at home.

I work out at home so far, but since I've surpassed my two 30 lb dumbbells for everything, including the 5x5 beginner's strength training workout, I think it's about time I get a gym membership. You just can't beat those heavier weights at home, unless you got $$$$.

>>196021
I do both.
>> Anonymous
Gym. $14 a month (fuck yeaaa cheap ass gyms) is cheaper than buying 10 sets of dumbells, an olympic bar, barbells, squat rack, benches, and an elliptical or treadmill. Also, cute girls.
>> That burger's a spah
I don't like gyms because I'm not a social person with my workouts. It's not even that I feel self concious, as I know I'm in fairly good shape, but I just can NOT enjoy my work outs around other people unless it was like running in the park with a partner who was a very close friend or something.

Work outs are like "me" time, you know? I can focus myself and enjoy it much more alone. Granted, gyms provide specialty equipment and usually stock heavy free weights, which is great if you seek constant improvement, but I mostly work out for maintaining my current look.

OP here : well i dont like buying heavier weights either but i dont lift for strength i power lifted through 4 years of high school and now i just lift for good health so im happy with lite weight and more reps

At the comfort of my own home, I hate people.

I used to go to a gym. It wasn't very convenient for me so I stopped.

Now I do all my workouts at home. I have a set of barbells and an old bench, as well as an exercise ball, and I run every other day.
>> Anonymous
I go to the gym, which is actually in my building and around the corner and love it. They've got tons of dumbbells and a squat rack and barbells, and I don't. I've done stints of just using dumbbells at home, but I never make any progress then.
>> Anonymous
I work out at home...I got an adjustable squat rack, barbell, dumbbell, a little over 200 lbs in weights, and a flat bench. That's about all I need ATM
>> Anonymous
Gym... Never bothered me working out along other people.

The fact that i'm paying for the shit just motivates me to go there more often!!
>> Anonymous
home. i feel very uncomfortable working out around other people. i'll jog/walk in the city with my boyfriend, but that's about as far as i'll go to working out with other people. even then, i wont allow him to watch me or join me in doing any other part of my workout.

i know it's kind of weird, to feel so vulnerable over something that isnt a big deal, but that's just how it is.
>> Anonymous
Home. Power rack, bench, two adjustable dumbells and 235 lbs of weights.
>> Anonymous
>>196034

That pretty much sums it up for me.
>> JESUS !vBOFA0jTOg
Gym, cause the atmosphere there makes me want to work out.

At home however I get the usual do this, do that, you have work to do, someones come to meet you blah blah blah.
>> Anonymous
I go to university gym. No pretty girls there, but at least I know everyone. Still a bit uncomfortable, though.
I'd happily buy benches and shit to train at home, would be much more comfortable and productive, but I don't have enough space for it at home.
>> Anonymous
i'd rather workout at home, but since i have no place for a power rack and other equipment i go to a gym
if i ever move to a big house, i'm gona make a kick ass home gym
>> Anonymous
>>196130
Fuck, I want that too. I don't need anything else, and I bet it's cheaper over time.
>> Anonymous
I had a cheap set of weights at home, but I never made any progress with them. Too easy to get distracted or "take breaks" that never ended.

It's easier for me to focus at the gym because it's not my house. I go there to work out, whereas my house is more mentally associated with lounging around, watching DVDs, playin' vidyas.
>> Anonymous
I started off wanting to work out at home due to being self-conscious about my body and lack of exercise knowledge.

Joined one 6 months ago, and the awkwardness disappeared relatively quickly. Gym workouts are more effective than anything done at home, and have trainers there to show you how to lift properly.
>> Anonymous
I've been going to the gym 4 days a week for 2 years or so. It's pretty expensive, but I get great discounts there since I've become good friends with the owners.

I prefer working out with people because of the social aspect, and also because I can get someone to spot for me when it's needed. Also It's like a competition between me and some guys; who can dead lift 200 kg first, who reaches a certain amount of dips first and so on.
>> Anonymous
I have an adjustable dumbel set.

A bench/squat combo.

Olympic Bar. 300 pound weight set.

And I do pull ups on my roof.

Better than a shitty gym, with douches abound.
>> Anonymous
Home, reasons:

Hygiene. Nobody touches my barbell except me. Nobody uses my shower, except me.

Second reason: I can do what I want whenever I want without pricks trying to tell me how to do it better.
There is no competition with idiots, so I can take it as slow as I want.
>> Anonymous
I plan on getting a good starter form, and then join a gym to do heavy barbell stuff.
>>
I was in college for 4 years, now i'm in grad school, and before that shit I was in high school. Each of these has had their own gym, and thus I've always had free access to workout equipment.

So can't say I really get the whole 'paying to work out' thing.
>> Anonymous
I'm going to a commercial gym for the first time, have a look at the equipment they have. All I have at home is 200 pounds of weights, and a shitty barbell that will snap very soon. No space for a bench, let alone a power rack, so SQUATZ at home have been limited. Hopefully the place will not be filled with arrogant jackasses.
>> Anonymous
I go to the gym at my HS (its used only by the wrestling, football and occasionally the lacrosse team)
>> Anonymous
I put together a Squat Rack, bench, standard bar (yeah fuck you), and 300 pounds of weight for $350.

Nothing is better than doing Squats with no pants on.
>> Anonymous
I mostly do things at home.
Going to the Gym is such a hassel and I never feel like working out there anyways. I like to have a set routine and I hate it when it's disturbed, which always happens.
>> Anonymous
Gym, because I don't have the ~500 dollars to buy a bench, squat rack, weights, etc., not counting the one or two machines and a treadmill for when it's rainy/the winter. Also, university gym is free and currently my hometown gym is also free. I work harder at the gym too because there's always someone better (and lots of people worse off) than you, which makes for delicious motivation.

in highschool when i would have had to pay to go to the gym i worked out at home. "body weight" exercises. pushups, squats, lunges, etc. when it was free in college i did the gym thing. i was lazy about doin it at home cuz i had equipment access.

now i do neither because i am just lazy overall. BUT slowly getting fatter and buying increasingly larger clothes IN YOUR MID TWENTYS blows, so im going back to the body weight exercises and im getting a pullup bar.
>> Anonymous
I go to the gym. I used to be conscious of people watching me work out and stretch, and thinking of them criticizing me or something. But I've gotten over that.

Although, I don't know if I'd really want people watching me stretch... I do the splits as part of my stretch routine. I don't always work on my middle splits because I don't want people watching me... I think its creepeh.
>> Anonymous
>>196466
Im female, and yes, with guys watching. Its worse when you get the occasional old man who watches you.
>> Anonymous
>>196468
honestly, ive never seen anyone doing the splits as part of a stretch routine, though i have oogled a few times. >_>

u take gymnastics?

wait is being self-concious about people watching you workout primarily a guy or girl thing do u all think?

im self-concious when im lifting big weight that i know will make me tired, or lifting small weight when it looks like i should be able to lift more for my size...
>> Anonymous
>>196479
ex-gymnast. I just like the splits.

I actually have to work very hard to get any sort of stretching done for my muscles since I'm very flexible. ie: people who sit down and reach for their toes, I have to grab my feet and pull myself forward and flex my feet to feel anything. Same with standing up.

So, the splits kind of help, because I do warm up stretches for those and in my splits I stretch my calves and thighs even more.
>> Anonymous
>>196483

look into yoga. Most of the poses have more-advanced variations for the very flexible.
>> Anonymous
>>196483
>>196486
this is actually pretty interesting. i didnt think you'd really need to stretch once you reached a certain level of flexibility. (i think i need to spend more time on /fit/ less corroding my brain on /b/) your pretty much naturally limber at that point, so stretching further.... what are you gaining? is it just to prevent muscle stiffness or cramps?
>> Anonymous
>>196495
Well I stretch so I don't cramp up. I tend to lose a little flexibility if I don't stretch at least once a day (I aim for 2x a day though..). Plus, I enjoy stretching-- it feels good and is relaxing. I can still feel a little bit of tightness when I do my splits, and I want to see if I can get that to go away with time. Also, I still can't do my middle splits which is something I've always wanted to be able to do. Everyone has their own goals... D:

My gym does offer yoga classes, but I'd have to commit to driving up there another day of the week (I don't know what times the classes are, but I doubt they'd be around the time I do weights), and with gas prices the way they are, I can't really do that. My gym is about ~5-7 miles away and my car gets shit gas mileage. I could look into a video but I tend to be less into exercising if I do it at home. Its a mental thing. I do love yoga and pilates though.
>> Anonymous
gyms are way the fuck easier than trying to set up all the equipment you need in your house, and it takes up no space! just money...
But College rec centers kick ass
>> Anonymous
Home, gym was 35 minutes away, and costed me 50 bucks a month. Got a bench/squat rack combo, and a dumbell set. An adjustable bench and a jumprope. 500 dollars total.

They have an assisted bench machine at a gym i went to once, fuck that shit.

>>196542
hm. were u previously a gymnast professionally or recreationally? i ask because i wonder if ur strtetching and weight lifting is to maintain "fighting form" so to speak, or just purely for aesthetic reasons.
>> HypnoticDan
I gym because I have no room for gear in my apt. I would love to have a garage-type area where I could exercise and, in summer, open it up to get the stink out.
>> Anonymous
>>196608
Recreationally I guess. I could have gone on to become very committed to it-- I was pretty good. I stopped though ):<

But now I'm just looking to be in shape and look good. I'd feel silly taking a gymnastics class now. Plus I'm not in nearly good enough shape to be doing gymnastics.

I use it to do various exercises. Squats, deadlifts, pushups, weighted dips, a few circuits around my yard. It's tiring as shit.

Search for sandbag workouts or exercises on youtube to see how far some of these guys can take it.

Behold. It is a thousand words.

(Note the adjustable dumbells, for the dummies complaining they can't afford buying sets of dumbells.)

i do both since my uni has a gym i usually go there. At home i don't have any weights so i just do abs and push ups.

Ghetto, but it works, and I even do them weighted on those two chairs.

Everything there is cheap. Garage sales or craigslist would be a good source for plates and equipment. No one ever wants to move out-of-state with those, and Spring is a good time of the year to pounce on the "I finally give up my New Year's Resolution" equipment sales.
