Hi, /fit/.

A 5'5" / 130 lb chick here. I want to lose some weight and tone my flabby limbs.

I've already started eating unnecessary food, mainly desserts, and there has been some weight change in the last three weeks. Four pounds. Yay, I guess.

I also go to kendo lesson each week for 3 hours in the gym for exercise, but I don't feel like once-a-week training session does much for my overall calorie loss. And I can't afford to do it more frequently-- time constraints. So, I'm trying to buy some dumbbells and/or ankle weights to use everyday while using the computer/walking, whatever.

But [Psst. This is the part where you stop skimming and start reading.] I'm hopelessly lost because I have no idea how to start. How heavy should my first dumbbell be? My ankle weights? I'm using my textbook [800 pages, plus the standard textbook hardcover] to do work my biceps with that curl-up thing for now, but my arms start to ache after 40 or so. Is that supposed to happen, or am I just overestimating my underdeveloped arm muscles?

So, what's your recommendation as fitness gurus?

Also, do you think a top-heavy girl with arm muscles and slim hips look weird? Because I'm an inverted triangle and am afraid to look like some kind of weird mutated broad-shouldered thing after working out.

Or, should I try to lose some fat and THEN try to tone my muscles?

Okay, okay. I'm sorry. Here, I even read this article to enlighten myself: http://exercise.about.com/cs/weightloss/a/toning.htm

>A 5'5" / 130 lb chick here. I want to lose some weight and GROW my flabby limbs.
>Or, should I try to lose some fat and THEN try to GROW my muscles?

Aaannd.. Fix'd, all for you, /fit/.

NOW can you forgive me? Please?

Depends. For biceps curls you need to have around 35kg in each arm or 70 on the EZ bar. If you're going to bench start off at 90 or so kg and move up. As you leave these weights behind you you'll also start to lose fat. That seems to cover your questions.
>> Anonymous
lift weights. starting strength. have a better diet. DO SQUATZ. if you bitch about "DURR but i don't wanna be huge" just STFU and GTFO right now. That won't happen unless you stuff yourself well over your caloric needs. Trust me you will look much better.
>> Anonymous
>>332306
As long as you learned from your mistake.

As for your problem, do lifting along with intense cardio on alternating days. Trust me, you won't get huge. Now go out there and get that squatz body!

My advice:

Don't take advice from this shitty board full of uneducated nitwits. This place is full of nothing but contradictions and misinformation from the latest magazines/corny websites.

Go talk to a professional trainer and get a gym membership if you care at all about your body.

Oh well. It's worth a try. And I was going to double-check with the gym-a-holic guy down the hall anyway. Just wanted to have the basic idea before going to him and hopefully not sounding like an uneducated idiot irl instead of on an anonymous message board.

i don't see you coming up with anything brilliant. You can learn a lot of shit without a personal training plus it won't cost you a cent.

Well I don't use lbs but you can call it 77lb instead of 35kg if you like...

as a girl, you'll do and think stupid shits so don't feel bad.

just get a fucking trainer, do shitty exercises and pay $$$.

If you're serious about it, read articles where the citation is at least from some reputable journal. Learn how not to think like a dumb bitch.

If you want your flab to be muscle then you need to burn your fat and replace it with lean muscle.

Do mostly cardio- lots of pushups, lots of situps, stair master, jogging, get sweaty, do it everyday or 6times a week, and keep consistent.

Eat lean protein like fish, chicken, nuts, eggs stuff like that. Try and eat around 1700-2000calories maybe less or more depending on how much energy you think you need throughout your day. I'd go with less since you want to lose weight and seem pretty inactive.

tits now please.

Well, my main concern wasn't becoming huge. More like imbalanced. But thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind!

And what about the weight of the dumbbells? That was my main question.

Learning doesn't mean you're learning anything factual or good. OP is a blank slate. She needs raw fact and professional input and not a bunch of bullshit from kids who think DIY fitness is a good idea.

>>332333

Yes, because gyms do not have free weights and everyone knows the moment you CONSULT with a PT that means you have to HIRE them and do everything in that gym until you die, right?

>>332330

A consult with an educated professional isn't really expensive. It will be well worth your time and money to get that sort of help if you're interested in living a completely fit lifestyle. Most PTs also have degrees in nutrition, unlike the people here.

All you're going to get here are overly opinionated responses and misinformation.

First, lose the concept of weight loss. Your weight, by itself, tells you nothing about your health. One person at 5'5", 130 lb might be healthy, while another at 5'5", 130 lb might not; it comes down to your body fat%. You have to think fat loss, not weight loss. There are websites out there that can calculate your body fat%. Or you could invest in a skin fold caliper, you should be able to find them in most health stores.

For women, the recommended range of body fat is around 20%-25%, and essential body fat (the minimum amount of fat your body needs to function properly) ranges from 10%-15%.

Thanks for the link. Bookmark'd. Though, I'm going to have to argue that if I haven't posted on /fit/, you wouldn't have given me the link to the website. So, if you're sincere about the validity of the website, I actually benefited from this, haven't I? So, I'm not so stupid after all?

Whatever, have some Google'd tits with my opinion.

>I know exactly what I'm talking about.

This is the mark of a person who, in actuality, has no clue what he is talking about.

And I don't have a personal trainer. I consulted with one for 30 dollars and left an hour later with a wealth of information that was backed by his two college degrees and years of experience. I used that information to my benefit. I purchased information, not a fucking babysitter. If you think gaining proper knowledge is a bad move, then enjoy never getting nowhere in life. I'll bet you're still in high school and plan to work in a blue collar job or become a mailman as a career, amirite?

Hey, who knows? Maybe I'll come here to camwhore my boobs (exclusive) once I feel secure enough with my body image on /fit/. Or, this might be an empty promise. Or, I might be a man pretending to be a girl.

Well most female athlete's range somewhere from 15-20%, and an average American is around 22-25%, so I wouldn't say that 20-25% is hefty. 32% and above is considered obese for women.
>> Former prince Clovis, the very not dead
>>332350
If your a college student, then your school should have a weight room somewhere. Go there and try out some of their dumbbells.

DO NOT choose the one that you can do 40 reps on, do multiple sets of less reps. This allows you to use more weight per set, which causes more stress on your muscle.

Not knowing what your strength level is I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say look at the 15 pounders. Additionally, don't just do bicep curls, include shoulder press, triceps extensions etc etc.

I wouldn't bother with the ankle weights, if you want to work out your legs, do squats and deadlifts, and yes I really do mean that.
>> Anonymous
>>332434
15 pounds? Deadlifts? Squats? Wow. Um. I'm not sure if I'd be able to handle that, but I'll give it a go. Thanks for the info!

>healthy

I assume you're from the USA because only stupid greasy americunts call switching to a balanced macronutrient intake "eating healthy". When I don't work out or don't care about food intake I still eat healthy even though I eat pizzas/cookies/chocolate/fries and stuff from the bakery store and there still isn't anything unhealthy about that since I don't get morbidly obese.

I never understood why morons who start dieting say "I started eating healthy". What did you eat before that, 5 large bacon hamburgers + those 2000kcal cheese fries + a 2l Coke as a meal?

With the dead lifts and squats, ask the fitfag friend down the hall or whatever, if he doesn't know ask your good friend Google.

with the 15 pound dumbbells, that's a guesstimate, use something that your not comfortable with, but that you can "work through." Its all about self betterment, not some arbitrary number dick waving.

Er. No. Just to let you know, the heaviest thing I handle in regular basis is the bamboo knife for my kendo and my violin. And that textbook can't be more than 5 lbs.

That, and I've never held a dumbbell for more than a minute in my life. So you understand where my uncertainty comes from.
