What makes jumping rope such good exercise?

I mean, as opposed to just jumping without the rope. Does whirling the rope around your body actually change how you jump or how effective the jumping is?

I don't have a problem with it.. I just find it so odd that instead of telling somebody "jump up and down for 15 minutes" one says "jump rope for 15 minutes".

The rhythm and the arm motions.

Can't a person maintain rhythm with music and move their arms in that circular motion without holding the ends of a rope?

You set your own pace with the rope, and it gives you a point of reference by timing the jumps.
