why is it i can do massive amounts of weight on the shrugs machine, but only 60 % of that with actual dumbells. could it be my grip slowing me down?

whats a massive amount

machines aren't always true to the weight, some of it will be lost in the pulleys and levers and whatnot. plus you don't have to use stabilizers on a machine.. probably the same reason you can bench less with dumbbells then a bar

Depends on how the machine is setup.

Is the weight set right on the shoulders and eliminate use of arms/hands?

this is the exact machine. i stand when using it, never sit. i feel it on my lower back if i sit.

i put like 3 45s on each side, and im chillin.
i go to dumbells, man 70 is pushing it.. i just dont know why. im still leaning towards the grip being the weak point

This. It's the fact that machines are much more isolated and they don't make use of your stabilizers.

Alot of the weight on the machine is directly forced in to other areas on the machine, meaning that you only have to lift a percent of whats on the bars. For example The guy in the picture is deadlifting a car which was more than a few thousand pounds, how ever the if you were to put a scale directly under those handles it would most likely say something around 650 lbs. Make sense?

the machine's doing a significant amount of the work for you. train more often with dumbbells, less with machine.

who cares about the number. It's the actual functional strength that matters. Try out lifting kettlebell sometime, you'll love all the muscles needs.

machines limit the plane of motion and therefore make for more efficient lifting. meaning more weight can be used.

in short, don't use machines. cabled machines are alright though.

the machine uses a fulcrum. This reduces the weight that you are actually lifting.

Deadlifts and farmers walks are infinitely more effective at building grip and upper back strength than shrugs for anyone who can't deadlift 2x their bodyweight. Also machines are shit.

i was going to spend the time to draw some diagrams, but fuck it. You all can learn on your own.

Its simple physics. Shrugs with dumbbells only deal with the the vertical counter force you apply against gravity.

Using the machine is different in that you are lifting the weight in a rotational motion relative to the hinge. Look at the bicep curl example for a visual.
