After I get reasonably fit I plan to take up Mui tai, how long until my skills become useful in a street fight? I'm extremely peaceful but I feel as though self defense is a reality I've been neglecting.

Muay Thai, nor any martial art, is particularly 'useful' in a street fight.

Street fights are unfair. Who comes off the worst is nearly always based on circumstance. There are, arguably, no 'winners'. If self defense is in your interest, however, it can't hurt to learn to throw a punch or subdue someone by grapple or lock. Generally speaking, though, you'd be better off thinking clearly and working on your awareness of your environment than taking on an elaborate combat sport. Fight with the brain first and the body second.

OP - MT is brutal... good choice. If you expect to win a given "street fight" though you'd best to cross-train. You'll definitely win with MT if you go against your average totally un-trained punk-ass bitch... but if you fought against anyone good at grappling then you might lose your sorry ass with only MT skills.... except that if you're good at MT you'll be disgustingly fast and hard to catch.

I would formally suggest a combination of MT and BJJ... but that's just me.

OP,

If you can find a good Krav Maga school near you, and it's AFFORDABLE (the only one I know in NYC is expensive as holy fuck), you would be better off. Is it perfect? No, not at all. But you'll get the benefit of at least being put in more realistic scenarios than during your MT training.

Shooto is very flexible, it has it all. Plus you can focus more on grappling or whatever you feel like, very customizable.
It's basically a mix of muay thai, BBJ and everything else that works. Good overall training and a very adaptable fighting style (which is good in a street fight, if that's what you're aiming for).

Sign up for a boxing class at your local rec center to learn footwork and head movement in rhythm.

Then buy an asp and go to a place that'll teach you how to use it whenever you have time between boxing classes.

Don't ever do BJJ, it's like a homo slumber party, you won't learn anything. Be sure to work your core, too. Core strength is very useful when it comes to strength-based athletics.

Muay Thai is definitely the best thing to learn for striking. It uses every part of your body from hand, shins, elbows, knees. You'll learn to fight from a clinch position where other MA's neglect and it will toughen up your bones so you'll be less susceptible to injury and hit harder.I'd take up a little BJJ too to get some ground defense.

There is no such thing as primitival in it, much to the contrary : Only some people are capable of learning such thing as martial arts, it requires more than strenght and stamina, it requires intelligence.

Everyday you train is a reflection of you having just a little better advantage than you had yesterday. The first class you take, alone, will at least show you how to hold a defensive stance and the most effective ways to defend the most vulnerable parts of the body without exposing any others. What follows is how to strike most efficiently to deliver as much damage as possible with sacrificing as little defense and balance as possible. Putting these together over time will develop you into a decent martial artist but it's a work in progress everyday you train.

There is no level or set time to when you will be ready to take anyone on in a street fight. That's retarded. You're trained to learn how to fight as efficiently as possible and how to grow every day you train. There will always be someone stronger or faster than you and the danger of a hidden weapon. You can't rely on your skills to get you through anyone but rely on your skills to give you a better advantage in a dangerous situation. At least a better advantage than you had prior to your training.

Just don't look for trouble and keep training.

>> Anonymous
take muay thai, and if not that, then (kick)boxing.

muay thai and (kick)boxing are probably the most useful striking arts. you learn how to block, defend, and dodge. MT lets you use all body parts so you are adaptable for more than one situation. not only that, MY has one of the most efficient and most powerful strikes out of all MAs. No weird spinny backflips that is all flash. just straight up ass-kicknig.
>> Anonymous
THE best martial art you can ever learn for self-defense on the street is Jujitsu. No not BJJ where you are on the ground all the time, but budoshin jujitsu. They teach nothing but realistic ways to get yourself out of a fight and protect yourself.
>> Anonymous
>>98539
Or you train shooto which has been stated several times to be superior.

Know why? Because it encompasses the good things in MT and you're free to direct your focus, it's very flexible. Meaning you could mainly focus on the MT techs but still learn complimantary techs that MT doesn't encompass.
>> Anonymous
plz, saying shooto strikes are the same to MT strikes is like saying krav maga punches are the same as boxing. they may share similar aspects, but their effectieness is far from the same.
>> Anonymous
>>98575
Good Shooto clubs have MT trainers you know, meaning you learn the exact same shit MT practicioners do in addition to the things Shooto trainers also teaches you.

it helps if you take your time and actually check up on the things you're talking about.

I wouldn't recommend Shooto over MT if I didn't have a good reason to do so. Grapple and floor techs for example are very useful additions to ones arsenal.
>> Anonymous
>>98577
but then again, shooto is kinda rare, let alone good shooto schools. but shooto is more like MMA than anything else.
the reason i dont reccoment wrestling and ground based MA is that it restricts movement whichc an be very dangerous, especially qwhen there could be more than one person or weapons involved. a shooto/mma fighter might try a ground based approach, which is not good. a strict MT guy will stick to stand up.
>> Anonymous
>>98595
Shooto is flexible, it's not BJJ or anything of teh sort. It's meant to have moves and techs for any situation.

Besides if you face 3 or more people you're fucked. No matter what MA you train in.

Besides, Shooto offers the option for ground based fighting, but it also teaches you how to fight if you happen to get floored and can't get up for some reason immedeately, or if someone jumps you while you're down, etc.
Also Shooto grapples don't just consist of ground based grapples, they have standing grapples too.

The thing is that street fights and brawls don't go as planned, so having a wide arsenal is better. For someone inexperienced in sf and brawls, robberies or whatever and your body is filled with adrenaline, slip ups will occur.

Shooto isn't just grapples (very common misconception), it's everything that works.
Also the good thing about that is that you can pretty much freely create your own style.

MT is overrated and way too hyped. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's not as amazing as some people seem to believe.
