After about two years of weight lifting, I did squats for the first time today. I've got a bit of a bruise in the area I marked in the picture. Do you think this is from having the bar up too high? Or do I need to let my hands take more of the weight?

Bend shoulders back and let the weight be on top of shoulders.

It should never be touching your spine.

you did squatz while resting the bar on your NECK? wow

dont put it on your shoulders either, otherwise it will end up sitting right on top of a bone most likely and hurt like shit. I keep it a tad below my shoulders on my upper back. The top of the bar is higher than the top of my shoulder, if that makes any sense at all.

i had that problem too. you have underdeveloped lats. when i first started squatting i had no idea where to put the bar, but now that i have bulked up a little it makes a lot more sense.
there is really very little that you can do right now. over time the blood vessels near the skin will retreat and you will see less and less bruising. Also, as you build muscle you will get more of a cushion too.
good job and keep up the good work.

I guess I thought it was resting on my shoulders more than it was.

Not really. Thanks for the help though.

K, thanks.

Thanks for the advice, but I doubt that's the case. My lat pull down is 145, it would be more but that's how much I weigh (I'm 5'5"). I wouldn't say my back is my most proud feature, but it's fairly strong.

You are doing them wrong. NEVER rest them on your neck.

As previously stated, you should put the weight behind your shoulder.

Squats are, by far, the best excercise there is, if done properly. It works our legs, abs, lower back and balance. You also work out quite a sweat.

The guy that said lats really means your lower traps.

I noticed that it felt more intense than leg presses, which I've done on and off. My big question: the squat rack I used had the barbell on a track. Wouldn't this kill the point of doing squats since I won't really be working stabilizer muscles?

That's possible. But my shoulders aren't bad. I've had good traps since before I lifted, lucky genetics maybe, and they've definitely gotten bigger and stronger. I won't rule it out as a possibility though.

i think you're right, sorry for the misinformation

Switch to low bar squats
or just squeeze your back really tight and have the bar rest on your traps
you'll adapt to the pain

After looking at this, I think my bar placement wasn't too far off. I may just have to get used to it.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
