Sup /fit/,

This place is called Health & Fitness, but does that exclude mental health? What's a good remedy for depression without those meds that make you even crazier?

Pic related, it's me and my bitches.

"But what happens, the antidepressant, all it does is mask the problem. There's ways, [with] vitamins and through exercise and various things... I'm not saying that that isn't real. That's not what I'm saying. That's an alteration of what I'm saying. I'm saying that drugs aren't the answer, these drugs are very dangerous. They're mind-altering, antipsychotic drugs. And there are ways of doing it without that so that we don't end up in a brave new world." -Tom Cruise

No shit they're mind altering, Mr. Cruise. Depressed minds need to be altered because they have serotonin imbalances. These imbalances are sometimes unavoidable from birth, but are often caused over time due to over issues. A lot of depressed people start off "shy", which is more a personality trait than anything, but it snowballs into low self-esteem, second guessing and paranoia, which ends up causing whacked out serotonin levels, which results in a depressed nervous system.

Drugs often do not mask the problem. The reality is that drugs correct the problem for a certain period of time such that your body naturally adapts to the new hormone levels in your brain and begins producing them itself in normal levels.

Drugs are more like a cast, not a mask. You put a cast on a broken limb to keep it together better and eventually it heals and you take off the cast. Same applies to chemical imbalances in the brain.

People who think "Oh, if I get on drugs for my depression, I'll just be depressed again when I stop taking them!" have no idea how this stuff works. You take the drugs for a certain period of time before stopping. If you stop early, yeah, you will resume being depressed, just like if you take an armsplint off early you will resume being in a lot of pain.

Okay exercise fags, I get it, but exercise isn't an end all cure for depression. What ELSE could I do? I've heard St. John's Wort is used to treat depression, but it's supposedly "dangerous?" What do I do?

In b4 barrel roll, an hero, etc. etc.

St John's Wort isn't dangerous, it's just proven ineffective.

1. Exercise releases endorphins. Doing it habitually and seeing progress feels good, just like excelling in any activity does. Same goes for your nutrition- sticking to a sensible diet feels like a personal victory in addition to being physically good for you.

2. Fish Oil MAY have a beneficial effect on mood. Didn't do that much for me, though.

3. Vitamin D is necessary for proper mood. Get some sun (but don't burn) or make sure your multivitamin has enough D.

4. Chronic low energy plays a part. You may be anemic, in which case Iron and B-vitamin supps will help.

Actually, physical health can greatly aid mental health.

Try working out really hard. Create a routine. All the endorphines and other various chemicals/hormones (testosterone etc..) released from/while working out can go a LONG LONG way towards helping with depression.

In fact, more and more doctors are acknowledging that a major cause of our rapid rise in depression as a society has come from our sedentary lifestyle.

You're an idiot. Stop talking. You know less about psycho-pharmacology than Tam Crooz.

My personal experience is that:
Sunlight
Diet
Fitness
Company (even crap company)

are all major factors in staving off depression. If I'm staying indoors, eating like shit, alone... depression is going to hit. Sometimes within a couple of days and I'm down in it.

you're depressed because you have a stagnant mind and your personnality needs to be worked on.

Runnning didn't do shit for me. Heavy weight lifting has made a huge difference, but it was never enough. I've tried many different vitamins, supplements, dietary changes, and natural remedies to help with my mood. I've been on at least a dozen different types of medications and seen several psychiatrists. In all likelihood I will have to take medication for the rest of my life. I still have to watch my diet, sleep, and exercise (in addition to the medications). It upsets me when people bash on medications because without them I would have killed myself a long time ago. Everyone that I know that hasn't experienced SEVERE mental illness or cared for someone with it has been very closed minded towards medications and mental illness. I hope you find something that works without too much pain.
