In need of Cardio help! Anon
Hello /fit/!
I was curious as to a good way to increase stamina? I have taken 4 years of martial arts (koreo gumdo, hapkido, tae kwan) so I feel fairly confident about my body. I also have taken an "advanced conditioning" course at my high school, which was fun (max bench was 135, usually did around 120) I am 5'10 and 170 lbs. (pic is me- gotta love new webcam!)
Anyway, my question is about stamina. I can't run very far without getting very winded. I want to be a police officer, so this would be a problem if I can't chase someone down. My diet is shitty as hell (at college, usually have a 6inch sub or taco bell) I am on a very limited budget and have a huge lack of ability to get to proper nutrition.

tl;dr
I am fit but have no stamina. What do I do?

Also, that was me flexing (best pic I could get in the dark)

Also, I do walk about 30 minutes every day down and up a very steep hill

Hm. I don't like your body, but I guess I prefer it to a fatass'.

walk a mile or two a day, after say two weeks jog as much as you can of that portion, after a week of that run.

look at say 3 months to get into a decent shape cardio wise, don't expect things to happen overnight. Also if you have problems with running barefoot- buy the running shoes which you feel most comfortable in.

Swimming is another great way to build up cardio.

A treadmill, stairmaster elliptical machine or w/e else a gym has is NOT. It is a lazy and expensive way of lying to yourself.

Once you're running a mile a day your diet wont really matter, baby steps mmkay, nutrition is going to be difficult unless you teach yourself.

Yeah well first, your diet can play a role in how your body operates. If you have a shitty diet your body will be naturally more tired.
Foods have also been linked to asthma, and even psychological problems..

Since you're fairly active, I'd suggest chowing down on fruits and veggies and try drinking the right amount of water your body needs everyday.
(There's shit online to figure out the intake you need, I'd say if you're doing lots of excersise everday, at least 2 litres based on your size.)

Regarding your "lack of ability" I'm sure you can at the very least order groceries to your door, or even find a convenience store that sells veggies or fruits. Ditch the tacobell altogether, and try for healthier subs with veggies and meat.

Otherwise, just start jogging bit by bit everyday. Eventually your endurance will emprove if your health is good.
Swimming is also another way to increase lung capacity.

PS. you don't sound fit or healthy.

I suppose maybe I could find my old speedo and give that a go! I used to be on swim team, would still be if the people didn't piss me off... Also, running barefoot would not work for me because it is freezing up here currently. I was wondering about the treadmill thing, thanks for telling me that. I used a treadmill at a ymca a couple of times, and i always felt like i could run a billion miles on it, and then when I did shit in real life I failed a lot. Thanks for all the help!

run for 3 miles EVERY DAY

don't worry about speed, just making it.

then start increasing your time to within decent amounts, should take you a few months. enjoy. You're gonna feel like shit, but it's all willpower.

Go out and run. (Stretch first)
Stay properly hydrated.
When you run, you will become winded, but run past it, everyone hits that brick wall.

You need proper nutrition to be healthy, go to the local grocery store and pick out healthy foods.

Throw together a sandwich (no mayo)or something healthy if you are hungry.

Not too hard to think of ways to eat healthy on a low budget.

Fuck soda, don't drink it.

Set yourself a small route.
I use Google Maps for this.
Create a starting point (Put in in your address)
Right click on a random place on the map and right click then select "To Here"
Then drag Point B around and create a route for yourself.
Adjust Point B as necessary to increase/decrease distance.
I suggest running 0.5 mile or a little bit more to get you started.

I do the best I can with my sandwhiches, always have turkey on wheat with banana peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and mayo. What would be a better alternative to the mayo?

Also, right now I am hugely dependent on soda, what is a good way to ween myself off that?

I am taking some small steps such as getting an apple with my sandwhich instead of a soft drink, and if i go with a drink i sometimes do crystal light (not as much as i should, for sure)

I also drink the dole grapefruit juices a bunch to try and get some vitamin C in me, but I don't know how bad those are for me in terms of sugars and other random shit.
