hey weird question here.

when exactly does the body go into fat burning mode? I did 40 min of moderate cardio today. went home and, out of curiosity, stepped on the scale. now, many hours later, I stepped on the scale again and I have lost 1.3 pounds.
so yeah, does it kick in later what?

You didn't burn one and a third pounds in a day you dolt. You probably pissed most of it out (as water weights 8 lbs a gallon.)

fat is stored excess energy. i think your body has unstored energy depending on how much of what you eat. you just have to work past that level to start using the stored energy.

1) when you go to sleep (the liver controls this)
2) when your blood sugar is low (starved of carbohydrates)

get more sleep. or nap.
eat as few carbs as you can stand
do some cardio daily

if you have a fatty liver (from drinking too much) fat metabolism is greatly impaired.

If you sweat like a pig, that can cost you several pounds of body mass within just a few hours. Sadly, fat burning is much much much much slower though. If I remember correctly, a pound of body fat has around 2000 calories. It would take several hours of high intensity training like fast jogging, rowing, etc. to burn that and that's not counting in the fact you never burn *pure* fat.

After you finish off your unstored energy and glycogen(hitting the wall, have fun working after that) I believe.

Along with your cardiovascular excercise, I recommend that you do a few push-ups and sit-ups daily, as that would help your resting metabolism an extra little bit. Running and the like only raise your metabolism for about 6 hours, which is effective, but should you go a long period where you cannot do these excercises, such as an injury, you'll be paying for it. Though cardio does raise your resting metabloic rate, it doesn't by much, and a supplemental muscular workout would help, even if it is just 10 or 15 push-ups/sit-ups here and there.

You know, you also lose weight from breathing and other things that involve the water that's already in your body.
