Doing it wrong Anonymous
I started to go to the gym three weeks ago and i also changed all my food habits because i'm a disgusting fat lazy fuck. I was 210 pounds with 32% body fat (that's a solid 67 pounds of fat...) so now, chicken, turkey and tuna + rice, oatmeal and salads are almost the only thing i eat. I'm going 4 or 5 times a week for a full body weight routine (12 exercises * 3 sets * 15 reps) with 15 minutes of warm-up on the stationary bike.

On three weeks, i just lost one pound but my body fat went from 32% to 28.5%. I seems i lost 7 1/2 pounds of fat but gained 6 1/2 of muscle. Now, i feel disappointed and confused. It seems i chose the wrong routine for me as i want to lose weight, and i was letting strength for later. So, several questions:

1/ I may be eating too much. Even if i have now healthy food habits, i'm always having generous servings for my 4 meals and i believe i may be eating between 2000 and 2200 calories. How much calories should i eat per day?

2/ How accurate is the measure of body fat (i measured it three times, well hydrated, using the bioelectrical system?). The readings were coherent (i lost 1% per week) but it seems a lot, even too much.

3/ I'm guessing you can lose a lot of bodyfat the first weeks, when you start doing some exercise. At what body fat % is it normal to plateau (losing 0.5% or less per week per exemple)?

4/ I whined at the gym and asked for more cardio. I'm doing 20 minutes of cardio in the spinning bike (HIIT, 1 minute interval), then 20 minutes on the stairs climber. Then, full body routine (machines, some free lifting, 12 * 3 * 12). Did i do well? I feel like an idiot because i was gaining strength nicely but i'm fucking fat and my weight is really annoying me.

<-- pic not me but related.

you're doing it right. stick with it for a few more weeks (6-8) and you'll start seeing body fat go lower and lower. that is really the ultimate goal here. let's say you end up with 12% body fat but weigh 170 lbs, how is that a bad thing?

and yea just so you know... I meant it when I said you're doing it right. your cal/day, meals in general, etc. the proof is in the body fat %.

get those reps down to 10 and increase the weight, just having muscle burns more calories in a day. Drink lots of water as most people are in an almost constant state of mild dehydration, getting properly hydrated increases your bodies efficiency. 1 pound of muscle take up alot less space than 1 pound of fat. Measure yourself to see the difference rather than weighing yourself
