So /fit/ why do people crack their knuckles? Are there any benefits to doing so? Any long term problems associated with prolonged practice?
>>
i do it out of habit

I've been cracking my knuckles since I was 6. Never noticed any problems, or benefits.

But, feels good man.

Also, it is very bad for your joints.

Shut the fuck up

It isn't bad, it simply releases pressure in the fluid in the joints, which is also why you can't do it over and over again

i do it because bruce lee does in his film

Dumbass old women would say that it leads to arthritis, but it has never been conclusively shown to have any negative long term effects.

I can crack my muscles my wrists and my neck and I don't afraid of anyone.

Yeah, it doesn't cause arthritis or any other disease but does weaken grip strength and make your joints stiffer. I'm guessing those are slowly reversed if you stop.

But I can't stop, it feels so good, man. Also my neck, back, knees, hips and elbows.

Exactly, its an old wives tale. all it is is the release nitrogen from the joints.

I don't lift with my neck, also, neck cracking is by far the most comforting. It also makes you look like a pretty cool guy

I do it at appropriate times to exemplify the awesomeness of what I'm about to accomplish

Sit on a chair with your legs bent, shins vertical. Use your arms on your knees to twist your body round.

Presto: lower back cracking. This one can really freak people out because of the number of cracks you can get in a short amount of time.

Made my hips crack. On that note, the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is crack my hips... I get a ripple of 4 or 5 on each side. It's magnificent. I also crack my knuckles, my toes, my neck, my back, and my knees. Feels fucking delightful, man.

I can't crack my neck or back or hips or anything apart from my fingers - does this mean I have good joints because they don't have loads of nitrogen (>>323189) to come out? I don't crack my fingers even though I can, just in case it does lead to joint problems.

Exactly, I love saving it for a moment where people need me to do something.

I can pop a place that doesn't feel like my hips but also not my lower back but it's probably something like the very last vertebrae in my back, it feels really low.

I just stand on a surface with good friction and pull my legs away from each other without bending my knees. My feet are locked in place so trying to do a split somehow pulls them directly apart from the hips and something pops in my lower back.

Also my right big toe's first joint and my left index fingers second joint can crack constantly. For the toe I just move it up and down or I can also twist it clockwise while pushing down and get a harder crack. For the finger there's a very special technique which involves pressing the second joint with the third joint of the middle finger and the third joint with the tip of my thumb with the index finger almost straight and then pushing my middle finger down, pulling the index finger in - forming a fist - while my thumb pushes and glides over the index finger.
