sup /fit/,

11th grade cross country runner here, just had my first race of the season in 18:19. last year i ran 19:10'ish on this same course at the same time of the year. distance for the course is 5 kilometers btw. current goals for this year are a sub 17 minute 5k and sub 4:35 mile (current record is 4:46). any other runners or people that ran when they were in highschool or college that would like to share their wisdom?

That's pretty impressive. I was a runner in high school myself. My junior year, I was running 17minute 5ks and my fastest mile was 4:48. My senior year I had worn the cartilage in my knees down to the point where I had to stop running because of the agonizing pain after 100 meters or so. My wisdom: let your joint strength be a serious consideration as you improve.

Mid twenties fairly, still a beginner runner. What are the first signs of bad joints? I like to wear those barefoot shoes and run on the local hiking trail, I hope that helps my knees out more that the usual heel-toe running.
