Over-activity and running Captain Fantastic
Pic Unrelated.

Is it alright/efficient to work out one day, then run the next? Will I need any rest days?

Also, I was able to run 7-8 miles about 6 months ago, but haven't run since. Would it be safe (i.e. no stress fractures) to begin running 6 miles right off the bat? I have been keeping up with various activities, but I don't want to overdo it with a run.

When I was in the army we ran every day, varrying distance, speed, intensities, sprints, etc.

As for jumping right into a six mile run, I'd advise against it heavily. You really should build into it. I'd suggest a medium distance, medium speed running plan for your first few, then go ahead with long distance or sprints after that.

Thanks. Probably a week of the build up?

And would 3-4 miles be good for that?

you can stop/slow down at any time. PAY ATTENTION to the signals and cues your body gives you.
