My fiance and I are going to try going Vegan.

No, (despite pic), we're not animal humping Petafags, but we are concerned about all the damage meat can do to a body. With chemicals and whatnot being added into everything we eat and buy, in the least shouldn't we TRY to be more healthy in our dietary decisions?

After the holidays are over, our new years resolution to swear off the meat and dairy will start - Now for the question.

I work in construction, and I am rather strong, I'm curious as to what sort of foods would best help in giving me the protein I need when I'm working out? Since pretty much all protein bars and drinks are milk based, I planned on going soy. But I'm talking about actual food.

Beans? Whole grains? What?

Help a guy out.

this is one of the reasons i went vegetarian! however, i still consume a small amount of dairy (cheese, and very little milk) because i think that in terms of calcium and protein it's a good contribution.

i would like to go vegan eventually but i guess we'll see how that goes.

Don't go vegan. It's nutritionally fucked, and going from meat eating to straight vegan sucks.

I can tell you that I've had a lot of trouble getting my protein/carb/fat balance to work right as a vegetarian. Legumes are good, but a lot of them are still pretty low on protein (chickpeas, eg, seem great until you realize a cup only has 10g protein). A half chicken breast has as much protein as almost 2 cups of cooked lentils. Soy beans are pretty good, though. New veg/vegans seem to gravitate to fake meats, but that stuff is just as full of chemicals and processed as the meat you'd be giving up.

TL;DR Don't go vegan. Eat lentils and soybeans.

I would totally go vegan with you, but its almost impossible to find a comparable source of protein to eggs, fish, chicken, and the like.

I would suggest finding a meat company that does not use grain feeding, as grain fed cows have the highest fat content in their meat. Grazing cows have the lowest amount of fat. If you still feel like cutting meat from your diet, i would suggest still eating seafood, as that will give you the best source of protein.

And like another anon said, soy and all that tofu shit is just as chemically, if not worse, bad for you. Plus, as a male, soy fucks with your testosterone levels. Reserach that shit... its been scientifically proven that soy drastically reduces a males ability to produce testosterone! Scary shit man....

The reasons for you going vegan are founded on bullshit, as is the reason for going vegetarian, but since it's what you believe then you want advice anyway.

DONT GO VEGAN! It's an extremely difficult diet and can be very unhealthy.

If you don't want to eat meat (this includes fish) for bullshit reasons, then go be a vegetarian.
It isn't as retarded as veganism and you can eat a lot more nutritious food this way.

This is as much bullshit as OP's reasons on not eating animal products.

The only thing you really have to fear from eating soy is cancer, and that's mostly for women.
The tiny amounts of estrogen won't do much to affect a male's hormones. It's as much bullshit as thinking the tiny amounts of antibotics in meat will do anything (less than 20% of cows are treated with hormones, btw)

You might as well be afraid of tap water since it probably contains more antibotics and god knows what other medicines that hasn't been filtered out.

The amounts of anything in them is insignificant and won't do anything if you drank and ate only water, soy and meat for a lifetime.
Your life would be shortened by that diet than an affect of chemical reasons.

Well, I can understand OPs concern about hormone injections and shit, but you can just wash pesticides off fruits and vegetables. My concern is what leeches into the soil and is actually absorbed by the plants in question. Look at the disease outbreaks. That wasn't caused by something on the vegetables, it was caused by the plants absorbing tainted water.

OP if you are concerned about the dangerous chemicals in meat, then find a local organic farm that does everything naturally. i've found one and it is more expensive but you can taste the difference. you can even take a tour of the premise (or at least the one i buy from allowed me to) and see what they do and how they do it.
of course, like i said, it depends on where you live. there are rural towns all around my state so i can find 2-3 all natural/organic farmers markets within a 20 minute drive. if you have to drive 2 hours just to get some eggs hen its not really worth it...

I'm pretty happy with how I'm doing muscle-wise, 165lb 5'8" 8%bf, and I'm a vegan and have been working out for about a year from 140lb.
