Powerlifting > Olympic Lifting Anonymous
Mark Rippetoe in Starting Strength Edition One states that a powerlifter can powerclean 30-50% of his deadlift by utilizing exclusively powerlifting training methods(Rippetoe 157).

One of the best strength:weight ratios in the deadlift is that of Lamar Gant, deadlifting 639.3 lbs. at 123.5 lbs. According to Rippetoe, he should be powercleaning approximately 319.6 lbs.! His total would be 958.9 lbs.

Conversely, the world record Clean and Jerk (which is comparable to an athlete's powerclean) at the 123.5 lbs. weight class is 352.7 lbs. - a mere 33.1 lbs. discrepancy. Additionally, Rippetoe states that an Olympic lifter typically powercleans 85% of his max deadlift, which means that the lifter in this case would be at 414.9 lbs. (much less than the powerlifter!) for a total of 767.6 lbs., pitiable opposed to the powerlifter's.

Additionally, squat strength is predictive of the squat jump, which is predictive of the powerclean (Rippetoe 157). As the world records for the squat are held by powerlifters (as well as the highest strength:weight ratios - a quintuple squat!), the raw, brutal strength of powerlifters translates into superior power generation than that of Olympic lifters.

Finally, Power = Work/Time. While Olympic lifters perform work in much less time, powerlifter's work:time ratio exceeds that of Olympic lifters based on the virtue of the incredible workload.

Tl;dr - do more SQWATZ and deadlifts. Not to say powercleans are bad... but SQWAT more.

But you said Olympics so I say squats.
>> Anonymous
Also, the advantage that Olympic lifts are superior because must be performed quickly (and therefore garner greater power) is nullified - attempt deadlifting/squatting your max slowly. The nature of maximum lift is that while done slower, it still cannot be performed over an hour. The powerlifter's superior power stands.

>squat strength is predictive of the squat jump

Is a squat jump just a vertical jump?
>> Anonymous
>>177134
Not quite - vertical jumps involve the straightening of the torso and recruit the erector spinae, glutes, and hamstrings more.
>> Anonymous
>the world record Clean and Jerk (which is comparable to an athlete's powerclean)

How is it comparable? It's leaving out half of the lift! What you're saying isn't true, or else powerlifters would be dominating the olympics. Just because someone can deadlift more, it doesn't mean they can clean more. It's completely different, they're different sports, and you can't compare them.
>> Anonymous
Let's not forget most famous powerlifters are fatasses who are going to die of heart attacks before they hit 50. Strong fatasses, but fatasses.
>> Anonymous
>>177152
Not really. While someone's Jerk limits their Clean and Jerk, the full Clean allows much more weight to be moved. It's balanced out.

I'd rather let Rezazadeh bone me.

Youtube Andy Bolton's record deadlift. He raises 1003 lbs. 0.75m in 3 seconds. Power = Work (Force, or Mass x Acceleration, times displacement)/Time, so his power is 62.7.

Now Youtube Reza's record Clean & Jerk. He moved 580 lbs. 1.5m in 3 seconds. His power is, based on the same formula, his power is at 145.

Duh.
>> Anonymous
>>177239
Oh yeah? That's Andy Bolton's MAX. If he was deadlifting 700 lbs., even 600 lbs., he'd get the bar up in a second or less. Using your calculations, his power would be greater.

Does anyone have any information about powerlifter's vertical jumps and sprint times to compare to that of Olympic lifter's?
>> Anonymous
Powerlifting is for people who shun technique and speed.
Too afraid of cleans or what?
Olympic lifts impress me way more than some lameass deadlift.
>> ZC !ZcFit7DWNs
>>178078
This kind of attitude is what keeps this board from becoming anything.
>> Anonymous
So Hussein Rezazadeh who can clean over 550lbs and front squat more than 700lbs can only dead lift about 600lbs? Get the fuck out of here.

This is relevant to my interests.

>>178078
the olympic lifts do require more technique, but to say that powerlifting requires no technique is pushing it

>As the world records for the squat are held by powerlifters (as well as the highest strength:weight ratios - a quintuple squat!)
the raw records aren't that higher than what the olympic lifters can do
and the suited records...well that's not really comparable to squats done by the olympic lifters
also olympic squats are generally deeper than powerlifting squats
both powerlifters and olympic lifters are strong, powerlifters do have higher limit strength and olympic lifters have higher speed strength, but the differences aren't that big that you could say that one is clearly better than the other

Compare OP's pic and this one. Of course there are small, ripped power lifters in the lower weight classes, but no one gives a shit about them.

Documentation or it didn't happen.
>> Anonymous
>>178319
Provide documentation that it didn't happen. If you've ever seen a powerlifter towing a sled, you can see how adept they are at sprinting. Ever more so without the added weight.

Also, the 56 kg weight class is the one with quintuple bodyweight deadlifts and countless quadruple bodyweight squats.

>> Anonymous
Powerlifters also fight crime and solve rubix cubes in five seconds flat.
>> Anonymous
>>178372
Same reason Olympic lifters aren't sprinters - lack of muscular endurance and technique.

Plus, I THINK the competition day of the Clean & Jerk/Snatch is the same as the 100m. Ain't that a bitch?
>> Anonymous
Doesn't anyone have statistics of a powerlifter vs. Olympic lifter sprint meet or something?
>> Anonymous
powerlifters use techniques to reduce the range of motion. ie back arch, wide stance etc.

oly lifters go FULL rom, like ATG, all the way etc.

both are fucking strong as shit, powerlifters are probably stronger and can grind more lbs. but oly lifters are fast as fuck and explosive.

basically. do you wanna be a super strong tank, or a glass cannon. using mmorpg metaphors
>> Sambo !hEpdoZ.tHU
>>178422

Exactly. I don't understand why there is even a thread about this. The sports are completely unrelated.

All sports are related. You're telling me the marathon and the 5k don't have a correlation? Football and baseball don't share similarities?

It really all depends on preference, since different people like different activities. Oh wait. I mean THE SPORT OF MY CHOICE IS CLEARLY BETTER THAN THAT OTHER SPORT BECAUSE I AM A FAGGOT.

Ummm, you're going by Mark Rippetoe's guesstimation???

You're an idiot, plus you forget that Lamar Grant probably can't powerclean319.6 pounds let alone THROW IT OVER HIS FUCKING HEAD AFTERWARDS.

And whoever posted that powerlifter jumping on the the 40 inch box made me lol. It's not that big a deal, olympic lifters at the elite level have 40 inch VERTICALS.

I do enjoy watching olympic lifting more, but i train powerlifting because i think its better for my sport.

Oly lifting requires alot of concentration, and work on form. it takes YEAR to learn the snatch, lots of practise with just the bar, lots of patience and control.

powerlifting is more of an emotional sport, you unleash the animal in your and fucking grind out PRs.

both are fun as hell

Lamar Grant power cleaning 319 pounds at 125 pounds is far less impressive than Naim Suleymanoglu snatching over 320 at the same bodyweight. Besides, power cleaning 319 really isn't all that impressive. I've been lifting for a year now and I'm only 80 pounds away from that. How much do you lift, faggot?
