I started to kick the boxing bag at my gym and I'm wondering how should i kick it for maximum effect? If I roundhouse kick it with the feet it hurts a little but it makes a louder thump, if I kick it with the part just above the ankle it does not seem as powerful. And is it possible to provoke the same force as with the roundhouse kick with the front kick? Mine feels more like a push than a kick.

Top of the foot is filled with fragile bones, so don't kick it with your toes or instep. For maximum force, kick with the lowest part of your shin. Find an anatomy chart, its the lowest end of the tibia. If you train consistently, it's like swinging a baseball bat at someone. This style of roundhouse kick is one of the reasons why Muay Thai is so devastating.

tip for the roundhouse kick so you telegraph less and do the kick faster, raise your knee straight up first like in a front snap kick, then whip it sideways using your hips and return it to the knee straight up in the air position, then put it down gently. This is to preserve your joints. And yes kick with the lowest part of your shin, but it doesn't hurt to lightly condition the delicate bones of your foot in case you fuck up in real combat.

1. Make sure you're kicking with your whole body, particularly your hips.
2. Kick THROUGH your target, not at it. You want your kicks to penetrate, not just reach.
3. The force of certain kicks depend on your technique and the strength of the muscles involved. So, yes, your front kick can potentially be as "forceful", but generally you can put more power more easily into a roundhouse kick.
4. Try to keep your leg parallel to the ground when you make impact.
