So a couple weeks ago I thought I'd try the Hundred Pushups program (hundredpushups.com), a six week program to ramp you up to doing, well, a hundred pushups in one set. Seemed ambitious, and I wanted to give it a shot.

I was in the middle of week three and doing all right, but I noticed that the top of my wrists were starting to hurt like fuck, but only in the front leaning rest position.

I took a little break from doing so many pushups, but the top of my wrists still hurt a great deal when I compress those tendons or ligaments or whatever. wtf, over?

I still want to do my pushups, and I've got a doctor's appointment coming up to have a look at them, but in the meanwhile, what does /fit/ think of the Perfect Pushup device (perfectpushup.com), pictured here? The picture shows the model still flexing her wrists, but I expect you can keep your hands and wrists straight while using this device, like you were doing knuckle pushups.

inb4doknucklepushups - Doing pushups on my knuckles just plain sucks and I'd rather not do that, but doing pushups on the palms of my hands is killing me. What does /fit/ think?

Just get some like this or build your own...should cost like 10 bucks at the most.

you could try not being a pussy

Why do you say knuckle push ups suck? They help you get that bit deeper and stop your wrists hurting. Seems that's your solution.

Wrap your knuckles with a towel.

If you want to go deeper then grab three chairs. Put one hand on each chair, and toes on the last one. Drop down between the chairs. These are called "guillotine" pushups because you drop yourself so low so your head is going below the surface you are on.

You have three choices. Continuing to do the push-ups on your palms, doing them on your knuckles or buying that junk. You say you'd rather not do them on your knuckles but you say that doing them on your palms is KILLING you. That sounds like that if there was no third choice, you would start doing them on your knuckles. So, about the third choice. You're not sure if that junk would actually help your wrist problem, which is why you're asking. Also, it would cost money. Changing onto your knuckles would not. Changing onto your knuckles would without a doubt not damage your wrists, in fact it would make them stronger, due to the position allowing slight movement which then causes you to work the balancing muscles. It will hurt for a while but the pain will only lessen over time UNLIKE WHEN YOU DO IT ON YOUR PALMS. Also, it's much more badass.

I think the choice you will make is obvious here. You're just looking for a way out of doing the push-ups on your knuckles. Now, is that a good attitude to have about your fitness: avoiding an inevitable pain that, when overcome, will lead to improvement?

No pain, no gain, man, that's how it is.

I'm not OP. But I would like to hear an opposing opinion to knuckle pushups.

I did a similar hundred pushups. I just started doing pushups, and everyday I did more than the day before. Soon I was doing a hundred.

you can get deeper with the stands and do a wider stance without losing balance.

put a towel on the floor so you don't hurt your knuckles

OP here. Re: knuckle pushups, I don't wanna because I'm a pansy, and they're hard. That's fine - I can start doing knuckle pushups, but it's gonna feel hella retarded, because I can't do nearly as many as I want or feel like I can do.

Before my wrists started to hurt like a sumbitch, I was managing 45 or so on my last set per session. On my knuckles I'd be lucky to do half that. And yeah, the number of pushups is important to me, because ...

<sigh> oh lord. I'm gonna invite the wrath of /fit/ by mentioning this. Good thing I'm anonymous. My martial arts school has certain fitness requirements; at this belt rank I'll need to be able to crank out 50 pushups and 50 full situps. "Starting over" by doing knuckle pushups and working up to 50 is pretty damn discouraging.

(Yes, I know. BAWWWW!)

i can do pushups with your ass

Ok.. either do knuckle pushups (which are actually better for you), or get arthritis, the choice is yours.

Ahh at least that explains it.

Get pushup stands. They do make it a harder workout as you go through a longer range of motion, but so what... you're still working out and getting stronger. Why worry about hitting some arbitrary number?

lift the bottom of your palms off the grounds, this straightens your wrists and takes pressure off them.

knuckle pushups = no wrist pain, and isolate your triceps moar.

TBH imo the proper way to do a pushup
