Hey /fit/,

So, I called up the 2 gyms in town, and got a quote on a family annual membership. It is $999 at one place, and $975 at the other place. Is it worth it spending that much up-front, or should I go with the $15 a week plan, which does come out to more, but if I have to stop for whatever reason, my money isn't getting wasted.
I think the annual one means I will realise the money I have spent on it so I won't quit.

You don't need a gym to become fit.
If you have space in your house.

I meant, if you have space in your house. You can buy your own equipment.

I really don't have much space. I live in a medium sized house with 4 people. Garage is taken up with the cars. It kind of sucks.

Oh darn. You could always have a few dumbbells and stuff, and take em out to the backyard when you wanna use em.

But if you think a gym is better, I'd say sign up for a month, and if you think you'll stay there for sure, then sign up for the yearly.

Yeah, I was going to try 4 weeks ($60) and see if it's good. If I had the space in my house for a bench, a set of dumbbells and a full size bar I would have that in an instant. But a gym also gives me all the cardio stuff.

Naw, you don't need to go to a gym for cardio.
I like to run or bicycle.
I like the changes in elevation and the scenery.
Running on a treadmill gets me bored.

Plus I think riding a real bicycle feels better than riding a cycle machine.
I'm forced to keep pedaling uphill, or I'll lose momentum and take forever to get back home.

Yeah. Where I live (Ausfailia), you either buy a good bike from a reputable bike shop, or you head down to the local Target and get a bike which will either 1. fall apart from poor construction, or 2. fall apart because the combined cost of it is ~$100.
Getting a bike here costs $500+, and I just see it that spending that much on top of a gym membership isn't really worth it. In the near future when my fitness isn't fucked, I will no doubt buy a good bike for transport instead of driving everywhere.

I'm riding a 8 year old $80(US), from Wal-mart.
But all the derailuers malfunctioned, so I took em off and now it's a single speed.

I like riding it uphill, it works out the legs alot, also taught me how to pedal efficiently uphill.
