Score, /fit/!
Just came home for the summer and my parents have decided to install a pool (the lame aboveground kind, but still). It will be ready for me to swim in it on Wednesday.
As luck would have it, this coincides perfectly with my resolution to stop being a fatass and work out. I've heard that swimming is one of the best cardio workouts one can get, and I fucking love swimming- so I come to you, /fit/, for advice as to what constitutes a good pool workout.
Keep in mind that this pool will be circular with somwhere around a 25 ft.diameter, and will be like five feet deep.
Pic not related, as seamonsters have a difficult time in small pools.

Swim in circles..alot!! Learn proper swimming form and swim properly for a good workout.
Also when I'm up to my neck in water, I keep my arms straight and parallel to the ground and "flap" my arms forward and backwards, clapping my hands, all the while keeping my arms straight.

Join the local YMCA if you're serious about using swimming as a way to get in shape...

I would, but a) I don't think there IS one near here, b) Time is sucked up with job + summer courses + the most time intensive career choice ever, and c) Job notwithstanding, I can't afford the gas to get to a YMCA that might exist but is over an hour away.
And all that aside, it seems very convenient to be able to workout at 3 am in my backyard should I so choose.

How long would you suggest I swim to burn the caloric equivalent of a 45 minute jog?

Not sure, but swim as much as you can.
