Is high sodium bad for you? I'm trying to gain ~1.5lbs per week but my sodium is going way over the 2400mg recommended for people. Should I just drink more water and not worry about it? I'm trying to drink a gallon per day. I have normal blood pressure so that's not an issue.

Pic unrelated but rockin'

Cut the high intake. Even if you drown yourself with water, it's still bad for you to take that much amount of salt.

When you ingest that amount of salt, water from your entire body attempts to drown it out in order to achieve an equilibrium. I'm sure you've heard of this -- it's called diffusion. Technically speaking, it's osmosis(osmosis is diffusion, but osmosis only deals with water). This is why you can't drink salt water from the sea or anything like that. Your cells will undergo a process called lysis, which is essentially cell death.

Try to stick to healthy food sources which don't contain that high amount of sodium. There are healthier ways to gain weight, Anon. =)

Hope I was helpful.

Same biofag here. I wasn't trying to scare you earlier with my talk of cell death; you're not even close to that point. :P That's only when one is stranded on an island and drinking salt water chronically. I was just trying to explain.

Ciao.

You must be eating prepackaged frozen "meals" to be getting that much sodium... Cook yourself and you won't have a problem. It may not affect you right now but it could very well lead to conditions like high blood pressure over time.

The human body is very capable of regulating it's sodium level. Any extra sodium (within a sane amount) your body just pisses out. If you don't have hypertension or high blood pressure, I wouldn't worry about it.

Why are you whining here if you had a choice of eating something healthy with low sodium but you choose that? You're not going to be able to gain the weight because you obviously don't have the willpower and you're obviously not eating right.

I HATE WHEN THAT SHIT HAPPENS. LIKE WAY OVER THE FAT DAILY VALUES OR CARBS, ETC. AND YOU'RE AT LIKE A MEASLY 500 CALORIES ON THE DAY.

Also, you should be shoveling down protein and vegetables which are low in calories. Not high calorie fast foods. You need to do a little more research about gaining weight.

Another problem with high sodium intakes are that they can restrict respiration. Now I'm basing this off of memory from freshman human anatomy & physiology. I can't remember if it's only for asthmatics or for the general population. Someone do the research for me, I'm too lazy to find it on pubmed.
