Actually, brains were a vital component of this ability. Since every other animal runs much faster than us in bursts, we have to track them down, while running. The way you kill it is by finding it so it runs, following the tracks while running until you find it again while it rests so it runs again, and so on until it dies of exhaustion or heatstroke or it's too tired to move. This means you have to be able to track things while moving quickly, which requires considerably more intelligence than slow tracking.
Also, being omnivorous requires much more brainpower than anything with a specialised diet because the fact that nearly anything is a potential food means that you have to remember whether or not nearly every single thing in your environment is edible or not.
