Ok /fit/... been doing my squats for a couple months now. Added around 50 pounds since. 5x5 every other day. Been going great. Never mind the progress on that single exercise, my progress toward being fit in general shifted into a higher gear since I started.

Till today.

The joint between my thigh and hips hurts now. Not enough to inhibit the exercising... just a twinge now and then.

Am I doing it wrong, or is this normal as you approach heavier weights?

If it stays for longer than a week or starts to hurt more go see a physiotherapist and coach to make sure your technique is right and to fix any damage.

You did it with wrong form and too much weight. I did the same thing.

It only started today. Should I scale the weight back a bit and work on technique, if I feel better by next weight day?

next time you go to the gym ask someone more experienced than you to check your technique.

if your technique is good and you're still getting pain, just lessen the weight you're squatting for a week or two and give yourself time to recover. your muscles have obviously gotten stronger, but the tendons and joints and everything else need time to get stronger as well.

also, it goes without saying that you should stretch before doing any weights, especially areas that are giving you pain.

stretch and warm up with squats. everytime. practice your form too. use a foam roller and a medicine ball to stretch out those legs, hip flexors/extensors, and glutes.
