Medical fields is not for all. Anonymous
Hey /b/ my father is a a fundamentalist evangelical christian, and a devout creationist. Well not too long ago he flattened two disks in his spine doing construction work. So on unemployment and coverage by his new employer he has decided to go to school to become a medical assistant. How ever their class just dipped into embryology, chromosome disorders, and hereditary differences. He says that all that genetics say is that man is god and in control thus is just the devils deceit. Especially the medical advances using Darwinian theory and nested hierarchy to advance the medical field. He wants my advice on how to tell the teacher it goes against his bronze age beliefs.

But I want to know how I can break it to him that he chose the wrong field if he is going to deny modern science?
>> FletoFleato !3GqYIJ3Obs
Tell him he can either switch professions or suck it up.

Also copy pasta because it a legitemate problem I tried to solve on a fail board.

Kill him.

just try explaining some of the basics of the field to him and ask him if he agrees that it sounds reasonable. insert the point that genetics could be God's mechanism for creation. I've brought my mom to more reasonable viewpoints on things just by talking to her about them. It's easier for them to accept some things if they come from their child that (I assume) they trust.

moar reasonable/??

we as a 1st world nation, can under NO CIRCUMSTANCE allow our medical professionals to be infiltrated with this bronze age thinking.

this is absolute bullshit. and because of our society's ultra 'dont offend anybody' PC beliefs, this is a real problem. Even in my own experience during university, the FUCKING CREATIONIST POV was shown to me in med classes. altho the teachers made it clear they were forced to do it, and had an evolutionary anthro prof (a FOB chink) tell straight up in her 'engrish' say how foolish and stupid creationists are and how in her country, anti-science ignorant shits would never be allowed to express these beliefs in public, let alone in a state funded university. good times

he's trying to be a medical assistant for Christ's sake... there's no reason that his views on creationism would make him less effective helping doctors treat sick or injured people. OP I would tend to agree with>>335480... try to get him to see that there's no reason that genetics and embryology should be in conflict with his religious beliefs... don't discourage him from a career he's interested in. Although do try to convince him not to make a stink about these topics with his professors and just to take tests/ write essays based on what he was taught and not what he personally believes.

Obviously I should be posting in this thread... despite my tripfaggotry being a spinoff of something entirely unrelated.

Here's how to make a point: If death/dying is part of God's plan then why would it be possible to BECOME a medical asst.??? Wouldn't that also be the Devil's Deceit? Wouldn't that mean your father, in his own mindset, is punching the face of God (i.e. SINNING).
Don't Christfags say it's taboo to defy Gods will???

I don't think there's any religion out there retarded enough to say that people should be left for dead to any illness or injury because that illness or injury was the will of their deity. I know there are certain ones that prohibit certain kinds of treatments, but nobody out there is going to let a car crash victim just die untreated claiming the crash was an act of God.

yeah I did make that pretty black and white.... I discovered a burrow of Creationists at my work recently and they have been making me rage ever since. Especially because one is a Bio major and the other is going into Nutrition.... Like really, wtf?

there are a more faggots like that than you would think.
>> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan
I never got the 'genetics is evil' thing. For one, poofing everything into existence without a solid mechanism behind it would leave fundamental proof that something created everything, and God actively avoids proving his own existence because that would render faith invalid.

For another thing, it's a damned sight better than the above anyway. If every change is by God's will, then He's built a system in which no activity is possible without His direct intervention, like a doll's house. Genetics and the process of evolution, however, says that God built something that is not only capable of self-function, self-maintenance, and self-duplication, but of actually improving its own design with each successive generation. Given omnipotence, there's no added difficulty to the latter, and it would seem to work better with God's general noninterventionism.

You've obviously been so satisfdied with your own explanation for other's belief's that you've never actually asked anyone. Nobody actually believes this. They may consider the likelihood of God healing them if they show faith by refusing conventional treatement to be higher than the chances of conventional treatement being effective. This is not delusion, though, it's a rational decision made using different information.

The 'fatalist' view, that because God makes everything happen so you migth as well do it because you would have done it anyway is one that hasn't gained any ground beyond cults. Anybody with a little intelligence is capable of grasping the idea that due to omnipotence and omniscience, God is capable of stopping anything from happening with no effort whatsoever. Therefore, anything that does occur has been allowed to occur. The mistake here is in confusingacceptance with approval and approval with intent.

Wow, I'm glad someone finally understands this.

If people were to actually read the bible, they _should_ notice that God routinely limits himself. That he doesn't he doesn't control everything, and things outside his will are capable of happening because he lets us have freedom. For good or for evil.

How does this /fit/ on this board? You obviously need to talk to your father. He has his own beliefs and no matter what you believe you should respect others beliefs as long as they don't endanger others lives.

Thanks for this insightful post that pretty much makes fun of itself. Everyone else here has taken the time to provide arguments where they have disagreements. Why don't you do the same?

Challenge him to a duel. If you win, he has to denounce god and respect how much sense evolution makes.

I'm gonna go ahead and bump this thread just because of the quality of discussion taking place.

It's not the fact that he believes this shit that makes me rage, he has every right to believe whatever he wants (as long as he's American. I forget that it's false to assume every post is from the USA). It's the fact that he JUST HAS TO share that fact with everyone in his class trying to actually learn shit instead of ignore it because it isn't "God's will".
What is he gonna do on the finals? What if the"Devil's Deceit" isn't one of the multiple choices? Is he gonna leave every question his narrow mind can't accept blank?
Why bother paying for higher education when you already know you're not gonna like the things you learn? I was in an ancient history class once where a bitch got up and walked out on the first day because the professor was explaining how important the Hebrews were to history. Honestly, I think he knew she was evangelical and was just trying to push her buttons to see how she'd react. People like that often become a disruption for everyone else around them who came there to actually learn, or they just fucking leave. T
here are a few who happen to be able to shut up and take it. They can think whatever they want but have this rare skill where they keep it to themselves.

I guess this is my barely coherent rant way of saying to tell him he has to either keep it to himself or leave. He'll only stand in the way of the students who are trying to actually learn.

I'm a fundamentalist evangelical Christian, and a 6-day creationist (hey, there has to be 1 on 4chan to spread the gospel).

Some of my fellow fundamentalist evangelical creationist Christian buddies are in med school. I'm an engineer, so I didn't have to learn this stuff. They learned the stuff, disagreed with it, didn't believe in it, and continued to learn medicine, because in a sense, where it comes from doesn't matter too much to a doctor.

Tell him that genetics is examining and admiring God's handiwork in making His creation.

OP here...

Yes I apologize I forgot that Health&fitness existed, and so the only place I could post this is random. meaning I would have to wade through shit to find a few gold nuggets.

OK I'm not looking for a theological discussion, I am really not trolling, but maybe the original post was way too vague.

You see I don't want him to drop his faith, I might as well re-indoctrinate myself with that kind of hypocrisy. And flat out I don't care what his flavor of religion is ever since the time I'm not forced to practice it. (Yes there are other religions that endorse creation that are not Christianity.)

But he was really down and out when he hurt his back, now he's in school and learning new things and getting active again. It's good to see and I'm afraid he may under mind his own potential if I let him sit in his "devil did it" stupor.

But I'm not going to lie just to give him a work around. I almost broke my own ethical code because I came very close to telling him that many creationists believe base pairs and genetic similarities equal similar archetypes instead of common ancestry. But it's a little harder once you acknowledge reproduction with variation.

I'm not looking to break him so he drops his interest in the medical field, it's the exact opposite.

It's just a bit difficult to encourage him to secede on this touchy subject.

You might ask him to speak with other members of his congregation who are doctors/nurses/whatever, or maybe at sister churches if there's none at his church.

knowing how evangelic christians sometimes act, they might just raise a huge issue out of it and force his scool to teach the creationist view point in the name of free speech.

Can they even do that it's not like it federally or publicly funded.

And if it was creation still would have no place there.

Propably not but the point is they might see it as a huge injustice. Which is not helpful for OP's dad.

Even so, seeing as they went through years of training, they should be used to it, and will provide a way to deal with it.

Trust me, not all of us care enough to demand textbooks teaching creationism. We (or at least my circle of fundamentalists) trust that you're mature enough as a college student to work out on your own how to reconcile your faith and what your school teaches you.

Your father is an idiot. Tell him if he wants to go into a field of science to grow a fucking brain first. If he tells the teacher about his beliefs the teacher will laugh in his face. 99.85% of earth/life scientists believe in evolution...

Get him a dull monotonous job that doesn't require much thinking.

The thing is it's not like they are teaching evolution. It's just that evolution is the unifying theory of modern biology, you really can't go anywhere in biology with out it poping up. So hereditary differences and chromosome disorders are common supporters to the theory.

I talking to my father earlier today and I couldn't help but bring up Cern and the LHC because lets face it everyone is talking about it anyway. I mentioned that that they hope to crack the code of such thing as gravity and what quarks are and are made out of. By recreating conditions near to that of instances after the big bang. And his reaction got me, it wasn't that he doesn't need to believe it. It was "they shouldn't be allowed to do that." Knowing the BS they went through in Texas this really pissed me off. So I chalked it up to his other sayings like "Well Darwin didn't think of evolution while being hit by poop thrown by a monkey turning into a man." (Trying to talk to him about evolution.) and "I believe in matter, god matters and if gods not in it, it doesn't matter." (Trying to talk him about the principles of gravity.)

Anyway I decided to not even try to help him understand. Gave him the "Talk to the people of experience at your church advice." through practically clenched teeth. Thanks for your advice.

And I don't need any apologists saying not every christian acts like this, I already know. I did have to attend church for eighteen years. I just find it a shame.

Thanks for the advice to those who tried.
