most membership pools will have a league you can join, the one where I used to work would have all sorts of ages joining...
If you are looking into just competitive swimming for motivation, then just look for a local membership pool, or try your regions swim league...
Physically, you should be fine, swimming is low strain, even more so on joints and so forth...
Even if you don't get into a league, you can always look up/make up your own intervals to train and for weight training.
