Sodium in and of itself isn't bad for you. The problem is most people take it far too much, sometimes two to four times what is healthy. It's very easy in an American style diet to get too much sodium, and not be able to get it out of your system as quickly as you should.
FDA suggestions that 2400mg is normal for a 2000 calorie a day diet.
