Ok /fit/, I'm healthy and in good shape, but I'm thinking about changing to a more vegetarian diet. I've heard it does wonders for your skin, etc, and I'm not a fan of getting bleeding asshole cancer at 50. I'm still going to eat chicken and fish occasionally. I'm not a diehard fan of red meats, and won't have any trouble giving them up, but I need some suggestions as to good alternatives that still meet the body's nutritional needs.

I also live off cereal for breakfast, and having as much milk as I have with my cereal can't be good either. So any milk alternatives or other light breakfast suggestions would be appreciated.

One food I have yet to try that is supposedly good is quinoa, when cooked it sort resemble rice, but is high in protein compared to other grains. (pic related)

tl;dr Tasty, healthy suggestions for a wannabe vegetarian/vegan.

Get ready to eat a shitload of food combinations. Most of your proteins from plant sources are incomplete; they're missing some essential amino acids. This is why vegetarian societies eat a big variety of plant protein sources. Lentils, chickpeas and all other sorts of legumes consumed in combination with dairy should get you what you need.

Soy milk tastes rancid, but if you're worried about your dairy intake (I don't see why you should be) you can drink it instead of cow milk.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to garnish these black beans and rice with a slab of ribs.

Don't give up meat entirely. Good source of protein while remaining healthy is homemade chicken sausage jambalaya, go light on the sauces.

Sis went vegetarian and her hair started falling out before she realized she wasn't getting enough protein...

I'm vegan and in the best shape of my life- but I'm also an R. Dietitian, so I know what I'm doing. Reducing your intake of meat and dairy can do wonders for your body.
However, my experience is that people try to make vegetarianism and veganism sound nearly impossible because they don't have the guts to even try it.
If you do not like soy milk, try rice milk, almond, or hemp. I would recommend hemp.
Breakfast suggestions- I could give you many. "Light" breakfasts, however, I could only advise from a clinical view and not a personal one, as I eat more than anyone I know...and I'm a 110lb woman.

I imagine you have to eat a lot when your food contains basically no calories.

Not true- My breakfast often comes in at 600 calories, without really trying. My diet is lower in saturated fat, and obviously cholesterol, but the caloric difference isn't monumental.

You willing to give an email or something on 4chan? I've been interested in going vegetarian for awhile.

lookup protein combining. find a commonly posted chart of three columns. one column has legumes/peas, the next grains/etc, the last... i forget. You can apparently pick anything from any two columns and your protein is complete.

However, I never counted the amino acid quantities myself, since there's 9 different parts of protein in every food.

I went Vegetarian, cut out fast food and only drank 0 calorie drinks with a little walking on the side, I lost 40 lbs in about 9 months easy and banged two girls since then. It works.

I'd google the risks of vegetarianism before deciding anything. Too many people get sickly eating that way, and it's not that they "did it wrong or anything. Besides, vegetarians tend to lie about their health.

Sorry to break it to you, but the best thing for an athlete to do is eat red meat/poultry/seafood. You're going to struggle to keep up your musculature any other way, this has been known since Ancient Roman times. Just give up and keep eating meat and animal products, it's what you've evolved to do, you must have variety in your diet.

Change your perspective. Consider chicken and fish vegetables, and eat that.

Chicken breasts are tasty and nutritious, with low fat if you trim off the skin and fat.

Fish = excellent protein
