Some copypasta (Dw, it's low carb) from wiki for you all to feast your little hearts on.

Muscle tone (aka residual muscle tension or tonus) is the continuous and passive partial contraction of the muscles. It helps maintain posture, and it declines during REM sleep. Note that muscular tone is not defined as muscular shaping or the aspect of general Human physical appearance.

I would like people to, for my personal benefit (I'm looking at being a personal trainer, consider this knowing your enemy) show me pictures of what they believe the word "tone" means, someone you believe to be "toned" maybe a physical transformation where the person looks more "toned" at the end.

As for me, I'm trying to get that carved in stone hard as hell look.

My definition of toned has always been "useful healthy muscle on a frame which is adequate for the size of the muscles, and which are accurate representations of approximate strength level"

how do you define usefull?

See, the word toned is like the fitness industry grand undefined term. even though it has a definition, just you guys all refuse to use it correctly.

Your idea of "tone" sounds just like a "long lean, functional" etc buzzword.

I've always thought that toned means.
Musckles that look like the've been worked on but not so huge as to stand out too much.
It also has to do with being cut. Low body fat percentage to show off said muscles.
By usefull it might mean more energy and a noticable strength encrease but not at the expense of looking to...HUEGE.. I think.
Does that make sense?

OK then omit the word healthy and you have a great definition of tone. Excess muscle is not toned, imo.

So toned to you guys just means low BF with SOME muscle, but not muscly as such?

Like, personally I believe in the bigger than big and cutter than cut philosophy to physiques, but I can still do a full planche pushup (3, infact) several 1 arm chinups, crosses, no chance at a maltese... yet

So I guess by some ideologies I'm "functional" but to me it just seems silly to say that, all muscles are functional, they tighten, shit moves, function over.

everything else is about power:weight ratio

which is basically CNS intensive, low rep training with low volume, not enough food to promote too much growth and alot of mental focus.

sorry, went off track.

Point is, you're all misusing the word tone, but I'm getting a feel for what you're TRYING to say by it. Although I plan to correct it each and everytime I see it:P
