Hey, /fit/. I have a hard time falling asleep, resulting in an average of 4 hours of sleep per night. I'm always tired, cranky, and can't study or focus on anything, and if I take a nap in the day, then I won't get any sleep that night at all. I think it also might be work related, three or four times now I've woken up at 3:00am on the dot, thinking about work, but this only seems to happen when I've had an argument with a colleague and I'm still mad at them.

Anyway, how do sleep better? I don't drink coffee or soda at any hour.

Melatonin.

Just don't abuse it, as your body stops producing on its own or something like that if you do.

Doesn't work.

Depends if you're a chick or a guy. If you're a guy, try working out around 10pm, you'll fall asleep by midnight. If you're a chick, getting a good massage or meditating will do wonders.

Protip: Don't try staying up as long as you possibly can in an attempt to wear yourself out so bad that you HAVE to fall asleep at a normal time. tried it once, something snapped in my head at about hour 39, and I didn't sleep for about five days in a row before I passed out in my Philosophy class.

Exercise, meditation, masturbation are all good options.

Doing exercise past 8 PM on a normal (or attempted normal) sleep schedule isn't really that wise.

2nding masturbation, though. That really wears you out and relaxes you. Bonus if you're a chick, because then you can just do it in bed and curl up and go to sleep without any cleanup.

Masturbation tends to keep me awake longer.

8-bit music from old Gameboy games lulls me to sleep like my mother never could.

You'll get used to working out late and falling asleep soon thereafter, just like you can get used to most any sleep schedule. My work schedule means I could either go to the gym at 5am, or 8pm. I go at 8pm, work out until 10pm, come home, have my last meal, and then sleep like a baby for the next eight hours.

Actually, I have noticed fapping helps. But not enough to get my asleep before midnight. I suppose I should mention I have to be awake at 5:00am.

Hell, it's already 9:30 in my time zone, so by my math I'd like to be asleep in 30 minutes. And I'm wide awake.

Rozarem is the shit... I have problems sleeping too, and when i have an early morning, i pop one of those, then lie down, and don't do shit... if i watch tv or something after taking it, it does nothing... Everything regarding it that i've seen shows it's not habit forming, and the fact that i use it sometimes for a week or 2 straight, then nothing for a month without any adverse effects seems to support that...

i should also note that i had tried all kinds of other treatments, as well... melatonin is supposed to work well, but it did jack shit for me... its OTC, so look in your local pharmacy

AMBIEEEEEEN.

Just, if you're using Ambien, be sure to bring a surfboard and a crowbar. You need to be ready to ride the waves in the floor, and a crowbar is necessary for fending off the furniture when it awakens and wants to feast on your flesh.

I also suck at sleeping.

Two things that help me are:
-Listening to Sigur Ros. It's freakin relaxing. If you're picking out an album, try "Takk...".

OR (not both on the same night)

-Doing some Yoga before bed. It really really helps. You can probably look up some instructional videos. I recommend ashtanga yoga. Trust me on this one. Try it out sometime.

Also, I would recommend staying out of any sleeping pills. They do more bad than good.

2 things that work for me...

1: Lavender oil. Put some on a tissue and put it under your pillow every night before bed.

2: Time released melatonin capsules, to help you get to sleep and stay asleep.

Actually, for an insomniac, only the second option is viable. Anything overstimulating can have your sympathetic system twitching you out for hours.

Also, no TV or computers. As I'm sure you know, a monitor gives off a combination of three colors to simulate the full spectrum. One of those colors is blue. Nighttime exposure to blue lighting can cause a disruption of the circadian rhythm.

Exercise dude...best way possible. and of course, this just means burn energy, which for your body type/weight can mean anything...

Try Valerian Root. If you don't get much sunlight Melatonin works well. Camomile tea puts some people to sleep, but not me.

Personally I thing the problem is you feel like you have to sleep. This creates stress and you sleep lightly and wake up ease. I used to do the same thing. I beat it by 1) meditation before sleep, deep breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth, try to relax your mind and not think of anything.
2) I stopped giving a fuck. If I felt like staying up I just stayed up. That eased the stress and guilt and when I went tried to sleep after a few days of this I found it much easier. If you do stay up try to stay relaxed and rest as much as you can. It makes it a little easier to get through your day and helps keep you on a schedule to sleep when you want to be asleep.

Maybe if you drank coffee you'd feel the crash by the time you went to bed, which would make you sleepy.

But no, srsly. Meditation is awesome.

I was 24 when I decided to get a new, good mattress. I went to one of those mattress chain stores and bought the model that I actually fell asleep on. In the store. I paid good money for it, and it has been worth every damn penny.

Get a good mattress. It's all for nothing if what you are sleeping on sucks. I already bought one for my oldest child, and will for my youngest next year
