I started doing squatz a week ago on one of those machines with a barbell attached with hooks on each side. When I'm not a noob anymore I'll move away from it. Whenever I do squats though, or stand up for that matter, my knees hurt. Is this normal at first or am I doing it wrong? I think if I was doing it right, I'd feel pain right under my ass muscle from exhaustion.

pain in knees = bad.
Can have multiple reasons.
Rapidsearch "starting strength" and read it for a start.

don't use the Smith machine to squat. it is not good for you. just squat properly with a lower weight on a free barbell.

wrong
also you shouldn't be doing squats on a smith machine especially since you are a begginer

Can a medical expert tell me if that knee is ok? The tendon seems ripped to me.

they don't even count as squats on any kind of machine.

in related news, i played basketball for the first time in a couple of years, and now my knee hurtz too much for squatz. i can't decide whether to just go light today, or stick to stretching and the sauna. probably the latter, 'cause i'm also tired from getting back together w/ my ex last night.

if you're having pain in the knee you need to stop doing the exercise that is causing the pain. and you need to start icing the knees for 20 mins a day for about a week (without squating) so you know the area has healed. After a week try squats again and this time dont squat as low as you where previously. If there is no pain then you can resume squating, if there is pain get to the doctor and have a unltra sound or w/e done. And yes, any medical professional will be able to tell you if ripped a tendon.

take it easy brother, you dont want to mess around with the health of your knees.

accidentally saged with my last comment, gunna bump now to correct the balance.

also forgot to mention soaking in ebson salt is allways a good idea for aching joints, though im not sure how you would do this to your knees....
