I'm getting back into a proper gym after quite a lay-off (have been working out with the machines in my aparment complex and bodyweight stuff). I'm just looking to drop a little weight and stay in better shape than my beer-drinking, lazy-ass self in college.

A quick background: I used to train for strongman, was training regularily. However I kept fucking up my lower back, glutes etc. It was a combination of bad form (when going ultra-heavy, I suspect due to weaker core muscles) and never taking time to rest injuries.

Ergo, I don't feel the need to go ultra-heavy and am thinking about foregoing back squatting in favour of bodyweight stuff like pistols (have been doing that in the apartment gym).

I'm also thinking of dropping deads seeing as how that's how I kept re-injuring myself. I did some the other day (got a piddly 275...I've lost 100lbs of my deadlift...I cried a little on the inside).

What do you say about dropping deads and back squats, obviously two of the most important lifts?

I was thinking power cleans, good mornings and front squats could get thrown-in along with ab-work and reverse hypers and other low back and core stuff.

in the end, you know what works best for you. just by mentioning some of the movements you did. i likely imagine you are more educated about 'wut u need' than any1 else here.

for people w/compromised spinal issues. fuck the backsquat, fuck DL, but then...why do u want to GM? its even more shearing force. also powercleans put a shit ton of impact on your spine, depending upon how you rack and the poundage used... but i doubt you have to worry about anything at the weights you'll use...lol 'ex-strongman'. mike boyle wrote much on this.

ITT: lessons why you never want to hurt your lumbar spine. its "game over, brah" and you'll be forced to only have the option of faggy crossfit movements and metcon cuz no moar squatz
