I am looking into starting to do squats, because I want to improve my posture and build some muscle (I'm also doing cardio/eating healthier and less).

Are there any ways to do these at home? I have access to a gym but I still don't really know what I'm doing and don't want to embarrass myself.
How heavy should the weight be when I am just starting out?

rapidsearch starting strength.
go to stronglifts.com

buy a squat rack or power rack.
buy a barbell
buy weights

start without weights
move on to the empty barbell
add weight slowly.
always good form before weights.

Thank you very much. I'm guessing squats can't really tone you much if you're just using your own bodyweight, right?

Or build muscle..whatever.

you won't build much muscle with body weight squats. They are too easy and after 10 reps or more it just turns into an endurance exercise.
