15 years and counting here. It is permanent.
The nerves are damaged. Even if a surgeon cut out the parts of your ear that do the hearing, you'd still have phantom ringing in your phantom ears.
There is nothing you can do about it but habituate to it. I find music at a low volume to be helpful. Don't crank it up too loud, though, because when you turn it off, the residual ringing is that much worse.
