I know of 3 types of bar at my gym, not including the wide variety of special curl bars.

45lbs-standard bar
25lbs-standard bar but with plastic endings
10lbs-a hollow aliminium tube

I think the most important part to remember is that it's 45 fucking pounds. I mean shit, thats not nothing. When I do a split routine to isolate certain muscle groups, I'll do barbell curls. put 25lbs in each side. So saying I curl 95 pounds is a bit different than saying i curl 50. Even with the big lifts it's good to know how much you can lift. 300 pounds might not be that much more than 290 but it's a bench mark. I guess numbers for measurement dont matter, cause you could say you lift 5 ocelots, which is more than 4, but if you want to know how many pounds you can lift, you include 45 for the olympic bar.

The weight doesn't disappear if it is being balanced. Maybe when you bench you can make mass disappear, but for us mortals you are still lifting a 45lbs bar with two 45lbs plates on it. The bar makes a difference it isn't negligible, if you put 2.5lbs on either side of the bar you are not benching 5lbs.
