Hey guys, there's this girl at my school who can run 7 miles in 45 minutes, and she's amazing.

I want to be better than her, just to be better, and I can only do 6 miles in 55 minutes :( I have some questions about like, how to run maximum efficiency.

Is sugar bad for running?
Is it okay to eat before running?
Are you supposed to run everyday?
If you did run everyday, how much should I do on average? I usually aim for 4-6
Are you supposed to eat a lot, or just normal? I try to stick to like, three 500 calorie meals. I usually go over though, but that's when I'm so hungry I can't sleep.

IIRC, my cross country coach would suggest loading up on carbs the night before a race. 1500 calories a day is too little, try twice as much.

6 minute miles over 7 miles is pretty good for a 15/16 year old female. It's not going to be an easy task to get there.

In any case, to beat her you'll have to work your way up to running 9 miles at once... and then you'll have to start doing some speedwork, otherwise you won't get any faster.

Endurance first, speed second. Eventually you should be doing a couple easy long runs a week and a couple hard interval/rep workouts a week.

Or join the school team. Prolly better coaching than you'll get here.

Squats build leg strength, which is great for short distance, but you want to focus on muscle endurance primarily. Doing your long runs and speed work will build most of the leg strength you need.

Squats will just build up more of your explosive muscles, making you more adept at spitting out quicker times over shorter distances, and doesn't help build the right muscles for endurance runs.

And yes, eat more, but eat healthy. I am a peanut butter FANATIC, but I agree that it isn't necessarily the BEST thing for you.
There may not be a need for you to completely cut out anything from your diet, just cut DOWN and increase the amount of good stuff.

Who cares about 5+ miles anyway, does nothing but hurt you in the long run, and you lose a ton of your conditioning if you even get sick.

Better to be running 3 5-minute miles then 7 miles in 7 minutes. Add in sprints and you'll be stronger, faster, and in better overall physical condition. Plus you won't get that enlarged heart, excessive impact etc.

When you run or bike, you are raising your heart rate. Your heart is beating more, and is therefore getting stronger, and bigger. Fat people also have bigger hearts, as you read. Why? That means it has to beat less and work less for whatever actions you do. This would actually make the OPPOSITE effect of an enlarged heart, do you get it? Right... so the London Marathon takes about 4 hours to run, for the hobbyist athletes, the pros probably do it in 3 or less. For the hobbyists, that's about 10 minutes per mile. That's what you're doing now, but over a distance four times shorter. Which is far less difficult. Plus you're a better age for this than many of them.

Well the thing is it wasn't just 6 minute miles, it was 7 miles in 45 minutes. The whole idea of keeping up that fast speed for 7 miles is like, wow. It's hard! I mean, doing a fast mile is easy, but doing many fast miles in succession is hard.

Alright, first of all there's a website that was written by another kinesiologist who's a specialist in training track athletes. You'd do well to bookmark it and read from it whenever you have time.

The link goes directly to fartlek training, which is basically how you would use the Law of Overload while running.

Have a track coach watch your stride and help you get your technique down properly. I haven't read through all the comments here, but if anyone's advised you to do weight training, ignore them. At most, you'd only need to weight train for around 6 weeks, and thats only to get your muscles ready for running. After that, any weight training you do is going to be non-specific and detract away from your goals.

And before I leave - yes, you're right. HIIT is basically "run fast, then slow, then fast", with no regard for the Law of Individual Differences, or the athlete's goals. HIIT is not significantly better at burning fat than regular tredmill work. Its mostly a marketing gimmick.

In Fartlek training, however, the Law of Individual Differences, Law of Overload, Law of Overcompensation, and Law of SAID are all addressed. This is not true for HIIT.
