Hey. I've been working out on and off all my life (am 20) Played rugby for my high school and regional team.. Did a lot of sports growing up. Currently training in Muay Thai.

Im in all right shape. No 6 pack or anything.

My question is. Whenever i do lots of crunches my lower back begins to hurt. Hurt like mad. It would go away after stopping but comes back when i start again.

Because of this i've been unable to maintain a proper abdominal work out routine.

Please help.

They covered this in a Kung Fu class I went to for a while.

Don't quote me on this, as it's only really a vague memory of what I was told.

Muscles work in pairs, one set to pull and one set to push (Very simplified version, stay with me). So when you do your crunches and your sit ups, you're putting 100% onto only half of the muscle system you want to train.

Long story short, do some lower back excersizes. The only reliable one I know is to lay on your front, then pull your arms and legs up off the ground, and tense your lower back. It was called 'The Skydiver' by my instructor.

deadlifts. either the regular kind or straight-legged for more lower back isolation.
