Sup /fit/, I have a question for you. I'm wanting to start training for MMA, there are some schools around my area (including Westside MMA, which had their fighter Rolando Delgado on this season of The Ultimate FIghter), but I wanna start training with a good base endurance. I just moved into the area and have little money, so I usually jog along a road behind my apartment complex that has a nice incline at both ends.

My question is, what sort of cardio training can I start with to raise my endurance and my VO2 max? Endurance is the key at this point, I want to build a resistance to cardiovascular strain and loss of oxygen intake, I don't care about my BMI as much as my performance. I figure the body will come after my training is underway. Any advice is appreciated.

Pic semi-related, one of my favorite light heavyweight fighters, Stephen Bonnar.

Yeah, I was really disappointed with his performance. The first thing I said after watching that fight was "Wow, if that's their showcase fighter I do not want to train there." So, any advice or are you just going to keep trolling me?

delgado couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag, let alone tell how he got a fucking black belt.

Wind sprints are great for combat sport cardio. Fighting is usually a lot of short bursts of high intensity activity (throwing a punching combo, going for a take down, etc.) with periods of low intensity in between where you recover and try to get better positioning.

It was actually sickening to watch. I didn't even consider his strikes punches, it was like he was lazily lobbing limp noodles at him.

I always kinda assumed HIIT is the standard procedure in raising VO2 max... Could be wrong though, I'm also interested in what other people have to say...

Eh, depends on the fighter. Huerta and Guida for example, they don't stop.

Then again, they're in a lower weight class than what I want to shoot for.

jog. swim. ride a bicycle.

these are all good. there is no endurance test like grappling, though. really.

you're not wrong.

also, many people only see HIIT as either running or biking... you can do it with _any compound exercise_ as well

I have access to a bike at the apartment, so I can at least cross train. I don't want to start HIIT yet until I get my slow pace cardio and endurance up. The advice is appreciated, keep it coming.
