Texas Tech cross-country runner here, about to do a light run today.

Does anyone want some advice on their running? I'm feeling generous today.

Please. I'm out of shape, about 30lbs overweight. I find that when I run, if I go at a "normal" pace I tend to get tired quickly. Where as at the same time if I push myself more, and go faster, I can go for about the same amount of time, or even longer. Is there a reason why sprinting like this dosn't tire me out as much?
>> Anonymous
yes!

i do next to no running or awny exercise, but i've just started.
i want to jog daily, what distance do u think i should run to start off?
Should i take break days to heal muscles?? or just soldier through it?

Yay, about time.

For>>256869,

Yes, a lot of the time, its mental. I know it sounds fat-fetched but try to follow me. The times you run normal, its probably not a good day for you but you feel like you must do it. The times you "sprint", you know youre going for a burn out, and you push to the edge that you think you can manage.

tl;dr, get yourself psyched for run if that makes sense, get some rest, stretch, and those pounds will be off before you know it

I've got to do 1.5 miles in 12:15, but everyone I work with does around 9:00-10:00. What can I do to better my run time? Slower, longer distance or faster, shorter distance? I've already got the two in, one out breathing technique down. Current 1.5 time is right at 12:00

Shit, I can't find my log. but first, give me an example of what you do.

like, have you ran before? time and distance? I'll give you guys the texas tech beginner book tommorrow when we team meet.

Yeah, I've been running a mile in 8:30 every other day (following the 5BX program),
should you run _every_ day with a rest day like once a week or is that too many? 5BX doesn't talk of rest days at all, but is a good program otherwise

first off, do your legs give out before you taste blood?

if yes, run longer.
if no, run harder.

I really wish I was kidding, but theres ways to train well rounded, but if youre going for time right now, you GOT to do sprints. I went from a just sub 20 for the 5k to now a 16:23.

Before when I was in boot, I puked up bile because I had pneumonia. Uh, now, I can run a 12:00 and I just have problems catching my breath. A lot of the times I feel really shakey and some parts of my body feel like they're going numb. I haven't noticed any blood-taste as of yet. I'll look out for that next time.

I'm an incredibly fast sprinter, but terrible at distance

What cuts more ass fat?

I run every day except sunday. I have one burn out day, one long run, 2 tempos and the rest whatever I think I need. It's just strange for me to hear about just a mile run, I mean, that's a sprint for me.

my mile was sub five thanks to the private teachings of all the money tech spends on me. but now, I think I'm 5:15ish..

first step is just getting the basics down anyways, if you really get into it like I did, then I would be more than glad to help out with my exact training, weight target, all of that, give hints on stride and bounce.. but hey, I'm just here for anyone who wants to run and needs some advice.

Also.. 5bx isnt...amazing, but it gets you out the door.

Oh yeah, thats the best way for a cardio workout. just burn out until you get the taste, and then keep holding at a pace you can do. good luck with it man!

cut weight? distance. by far.

I weighed 160 in high school, and now i'm 125ish. depends what time of the year it is.

Awesome, thanks, bro.

Just to clarify: blood taste = good?

Very. first time you go for it, you're going to get probably 400-600 meters before you feel like youre going to collapse. You'll really notice a difference with distance when your cardio holds up, while semi working on speed.

I don't want to tell you who I am, but I'm a transfer from a private college which is amazing in track and field. Texas Tech is lacking in support for sports except for football. Sigh.

OP here: I'm out. thanks for the talk, anon.
