Said friend goes to the gym with me for 1 year, and still 'wants to tone', ignoring EVERYTHING i tell him, because according to him 'i'm too muscular with too big legs, and don't get laid.' I wish i made this stuff up.

Or another friend who is over 2 meters tall and weighs 70 kg, and considers himself extremely fit, even though he smokes over a pack a day and eats nothing for 2 days straight. He also advocates that 'You don't need a good diet, if you just lift 3 times a week and eat whatever you want you'll still get an awesome physique'.

These people prefer not to listen to me, because 'You get your stuff from the internet, it's all bullshit, this bodybuilder down there told me this and that'. Even though i lift and outperform said musclehead.

FIXED

And wrong. Go shoot this trainer. The smith machine is inferior because it takes the balancing out of something such as a bench press, therefore using less muscles, resulting in less productivity. You can do more on a smith machine because your body is doing less work. The smith machine isn't good for you body because it forces it to move in a linear path, when you do a bench press normally the bar moves on a curve. Same with squats and well.. anything..

-Masturbating will make you thinner and will give your right or left arm (whichever you use) more muscle than the other.
-Eating less means losing more weight.
-Machines that give you great results in just weeks or 1 month.
-You can make your penis bigger with stretches (part might be true but you'll end up with some long term effect which aren't very good).

"300+ bench is in no way indicative of being fit"

In order for this statement to be true, one of the following statements has to incorrect, which is it?

"300+ bench is indicative of strength."

"Strength is indicative of fitness."
>> Anonymous
>>239223
If someone benched 300, it's assumed that he's training other parts as well. There are exceptions, but growth is best achieved by stimulating the whole body. That's why the bench and bicep crowd usually stall out and still look weak.

in the post he referenced i said that using the criteria of bench pressing is not indicative of true strength or fitness.

> "Strength is indicative of fitness."
There's your fallacy. A guy could have 8 stints in his heart, be 100 pounds overweight, and get tired walking up stairs, but if he could bench 300 pounds he would be fit? Strength is good, but it's just one part of fitness.
>> Anonymous
>>239240

>> Anonymous
>>239249
I don't think he meant that if your bench is high, you are definitely fit. He meant it's one aspect of it. By the same token, I would never consider someone who can't even bench the bar fit.
>> Anonymous
>>239249

>Strength is good, but it's just one part of fitness.

Therefore strength is indicative of fitness.

Truthfully the issue is probably just the choice of word, indicative. I understand what the post is trying to say.

Dictionary defines "fitness" as:
> Good health or physical condition, especially as the result of exercise and proper nutrition.

I didn't phrase it well, but I simply meant that fitness is like... an apple. In the same way that a half rotten apple is still a rotten apple, to be fit you need to have your body functioning well in all areas. Strength is one part of fitness, but I wouldn't say it's indicative of it. Similarly, a guy who can bench 200 pounds , but who eats well and has little fat on him is going to be more fit than the guy I described in my earlier post.

EXPLAIN WHY HIGH REP SQUATS > CARDIO MACHINE
>> Anonymous

cardio just burns a few hundred calories. Weights cause the body to repair and increase weakened muscles, which then expend an additional 20-40 calories a day per pound.
>> Anonymous
>>239271
ok.. so we're all actually in agreement here, yes?
>> Anonymous
>>239285
Pretty much, I was just restating my original idea because I didn't explain it all that well. My main point was this:
>Strength is one part of fitness, but I wouldn't say it's indicative of it.
>> Anonymous
>>239287

I don't like to keep returning to this thread, but this is wrong;

>Strength is one part of fitness, but I wouldn't say it's indicative of it.

What you mean to say is

>You can be really strong, but still actually very unhealthy. Indeed, many people who weightlift are doing so at the sacrifice of their overall health in their dedicated persuit of increased strength.
>> Anonymous
>>238670
If you do them wrong, they are very bad for your knees, done correctly you're fine.

>>238985
Cortisol is produced by stress, if you over-do the running for a long period of time, it's likely it will make fat loss difficult, especially around the midsection.

>>239262

no, even that is not what i was originally trying to say

weight lifting is good

focusing on one aspect of weighting lifting, to reach a certain level is detrimental and does not truly represent strength or fitness as a whole.
both of these would be well rounded as well as focusing on nutrition and health.
if one spent all day doing what a lot of bodybuilders do, such as bicep curls and other vanity exercises you may say "that person is strong". to a degree, that would be correct. however when someone says strength should they be referring to single isolated areas of a body or full body strength? is arm strength ONLY based on bicep curling strength?
>> Anonymous
Does running burn muscle? No not really. http://strengthtraining.suite101.com/article.cfm/weight_training_and_cardio

I'd rather have excellent cardiovascular health than be super strong, luckily you don't need to choose between them. The thing that's annoying is when a body builder asserts that they are healthy because they are ripped or can lift a lot, despite horrible cardiovascular ability.

I personally have a thing against fat people who think exercise without a reduction in calories will lead to weight loss. Most of them don't even make an attempt to exercise properly either.
