Dear /fit/,

Is there a way to make my knees better withstand the strain of jogging? I'm finally getting my lazy ass back into exercising and I want to avoid having my knees ache all the time.

fish oil pills help if you can stick with them. the only thing is that they make your piss smell bad...but it's probably worth it for you. drink a lot of fluid to help hydrate your joints and don't forget to stretch. If they keep hurting, don't push through the pain, you'll just injure yourself and possibly do permanent damage. Knee braces to apply gentle pressure might help too.

need to strengthen muscles around the knee

so exercise quads, hams

building up the lower leg doesn't help as much

All of the above + make sure you get proper shoes. If you buy shoes, make sure you buy them at a specialized store that makes a recording of your jogging style and buy shoes according to proper advice. Good shoes doesn't mean good shoes for you.

I think you just explained why my urine smells so strongly. I take 3 fish oil pills a day. But my biggest complaint about them is they make me feel nauseous, even if I take them with food.

Well if you just want exercise do cycling, low impact on the knees plus you can use it for commuting to and from work faster than you can by jogging.

I've been working through patellar tendonitis for over a year. When exercising (on an elliptical machine) I wrap ace bandages around my knees, with a little pressure on the bottom of my knee.
