For those guys who box/kickbox. If a person has decent technique on the bag and on pads, how long would you say it takes to get decent at sparring? I was sparring for the first time in years recently, and while I got a few of my own shots in I pretty much got owned. I just can't seem to keep my chin down, my hands up, and use combos.

so what the fuck can you do?

I can look good on the bags, get the occasional lucky shot in, and cover up like a bitch every time more than two punches are thrown at me.

Well then build yourself a good defense. Then afterward look into building a good offense.

It won't help you to b able to send hard punches if you get dropped by a liver shot or an over-right hand.

Then get hit by a hook you never saw coming and enjoy the feeling of you're brain hitting your skull while your feets lift in the air and you fall motion-less to the ground.

I happen to like my jaw, thank you very much.

seeing as how I don't box, how would this happen?
Maybe if some dude hit me on the street, but I doubt they could lift me off the ground

You'd be surprised.

My grip alone can push together 300 lb equivalent of resistant force. I'm not even a boxer. Enjoy getting hit by a virtual truck.

Not what I'm talking about though. I'm just saying there are not that many people around that could lft me off the ground with a punch

You're a bloody idiot if you don't get the point of what Anon is trying to say.

No, you don't hav 150 pds of grip per hand, plus, what does that have to do with punching?

plus, I really wouldn't be too surprised, I mean off the ground? that is a lot of force man

If you want to get better at sparring... well, spar. I mean, I had the same problem for a while myself. The reason being was that my mind just couldn't respond fast enough in a fight. I knew how to do what I wanted to do, I just didn't know when to do it.

So, start sparring. Do it a lot. It's all about effectiveness. There are hundreds of ways to do the same thing. If what you are doing isn't being effective, go talk to your trainer or just try something else. Eventually, instinct will replace reaction and you'll just sorta 'know' what to do.

Also, when you're doing shadow boxing and whatnot, try to do it in front of a mirror. Always make sure that whenever you throw a punch your guard is still up.

Then again, I'm a Muay Thai guy. So, there's that too. In Muay Thai, the way you look while fighting is important. It's all about big, powerful stances and not ever cowering behind your guard.

tl;dr: Spar to get better at sparring.

If the punch is well placed it will throw you down.

(disregard the fact thatit's brock lesnar, that he's monstruously huge and strong. Just look at the technique.)
He hits the chin and the guy falls back as he's still going on with the punch making him go off the ground.
