Alcohol or nyquil will help put you initially to sleep, but will screw up the actual sleep itself, making you tired when you wake up.
If you are staying up all night, you should be fine. On days that you aren't, make sure you aren't taking naps during the day, that you aren't eating 2-3 hours before bed, and that you aren't doing anything active for the last hour or so.
