Hey /fit/, first time poster on this board, so feel free to yell at me if this has been asked a million times before.

I've been about 10-20 pounds overweight since High School, and since I graduated college, I gained even more fat, leaving me with about 30 extra pounds of fat. I'm 5'10" and 240 pounds; a lot of it is muscle, so I'm not a behemoth, but I'm putting my foot down. For a while I was just chubby; now I'm on the verge of being Fat. So, I'm going to change my lifestyle and get down to 200 pounds--I'll be happy then, with a 36" waist.

Anyway, I'm pissed off. Everywhere you go, someone has another explanation about how to lose fat. And the bitch of it is that they all conflict with each other. Some people say that cardio puts you in "fat burn" mode, and weight training will just make you gain muscle without losing fat. Other people say that the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn. Other people say that it doesn't matter what kind of physical activity you're getting, as long as you're burning x amount of calories per day. Other people say that if you lower your caloric intake too much, your body adjusts to it and you stop losing fat.

So, /fit/, my question is: WTF? Does it really just depend on the person? My general approach is going to be "more exercise, less sugar & carbs". I'm collecting healthy recipes from my nutrition freak dad & stepmom, I took up fencing (twice a week), and I got a recumbent exercise bike, and I'm doing push-ups, sit-ups and some dumb-bell exercises every couple of days. Is that gonna work, or what?

Pic related--me before gaining about 5/10 pounds (putting me at my current weight).

Dude 5'10 and 240 is fat as hell. One of my suitemates is 6'1 and 225 (nigga) and on the football team and he is just absolutely huge.

So stop lying to yourself, your fat.

The biggest key to any routine is intensity. Yeah your becoming more active, but do you really think it will help? Fuck that, go all out, run your body into the fucking ground.

Is that you in the pic?

dude fuck trying to beat around the bush, you're fat..

3 tips I can give?

EAT HEALTHY... if you say you are you're a fucking liar... EAT HEALTHY.. it's called four food groups.

CARDIO... run until you puke.. seriously... my first time I ran an hour and wanted to fucking hurl.. that was when i was 260 and wanted a change in my life.. ever since that day I feel great.

STRENGTH TRAINING... yeah eating right and cardio are great... but you don't get sex when you're a fat tub of shit.. ADMIT IT FATTY... do some weights if you want a gf eventually or a bj from some cute/hot chick at some point.

Enjoy and get started you fat fuck.

All of them are correct.

The more lean mass you have, the higher your metabolism, the more calories you burn.

The only time you drop weight is when your total calories burned are greater than the total calories you took in.

Listen. Not enough of that is muscle for anyone to NOT think you're fat. You probably are just a big guy, and you aren't going to lose weight and become "skinny". You'll still be a big guy, just not fat.

And it doesn't matter what kinda of physical activity you get as long as you're burning x calories, HOWEVER doing lots of cardio activity GREATLY assists this process by burning more calories and losing the weight faster than just not eating as many calories.

OP here. OK guys... I know you feel strongly about keeping us "fatties" off your imageboard, but jesus. I didn't expect you to be retards. "Fat as hell"? Sure, dude. I'm "fat as hell" in that picture. Yeah.

Also...

I don't have to rely on my six pack abs to get me laid... god help you.

Also, "the four food groups"? Guys... come on. That's middle school shit.

Sorry fellas. I expected to find some like-minded individuals on this board... looks like it's just a bunch of 14-year-olds instead. Negative reinforcement went out with bell-bottoms. Seeya!

Thanks guys... you both restated exactly what I said in my OP. And, I don't want to be thin. I'm a big guy, that's just my build. That's why I said I'll be happy with a 36" waist. I'll still be big--just not fat.

Enjoy being a doucher, douchebag. Fitty bucks says I can lose the fat by the end of the year without running till I blow chunks, or hating myself.

Protip: You don't blow chunks because you hate yourself...Its just you wanna KICK FUCKING ASS SO FUCKING BAD

Seriously man, what did you expect? Mix in with the ribbing, you got good advice. Just fucking do it.

If I posted a pic of my 6'1" 190lb frame people would ask me WHERE THE FUKC AR YUR PEX MAN?

And they would be right. Take the shit with a grain of salt, or gtfo

e "more exercise, less sugar & carbs"

This will work. Assuming that less sugar and carbs also means less calories.

cardio burns more calories then weight lifting(in general) and will help you lose weight faster.
But weightlifting also burns calories. It has the added benefit of making your weight loss more sustainable. Muscles burn calories, the more muscle you have the better.

Ok OP. I'm going to give you serious advice. Do both weight training and cardio. You will gain muscle which consumes calories, and burn calories when you do cardio. I hate to be cliche` like all the other people here but you should look up HIIT. It's a great cardiovascular program that will get you burning fat pretty efficiently. Also, don't go on some absurd diet. Just try to get in some lean meats, vegetables, fruits, whole grain breads, etc. Good luck.

It only counts as "ribbing" if the ribber isn't a schmuck!

>>290557
From your advice, and the above poster's advice, and pretty much everything I've seen, I generally get the impression that the winning formula is balance. You can't do all cardio or all weight-training; you can't cut carbs completely, nor can you pig out on them. I'll just have to keep at it.

Yeah man, I ruled out diets a long time ago. Diets always struck me as stupid--by their very nature, diets are temporary. Once you stop dieting, what's going to stop you from gaining the fat back? Jack shit. You need to change your lifestyle, and that's what I'm trying to do.

Changing what you drink is probably the easiest thing to do. Switch over to drinking water. Assuming you have 3-4 drinks a day you can easily cut out 500 calories just by drinking water.

I've never seen ANYONE post here without getting more than 50% negative replies.

You already know all the theories, see which works on your physique.

i don't know why OP didn't expect trolling. this is 4chan, not fucking webMD.

to answer OP's question: i dropped 30 lbs in 2 months by cutting my caloric intake substantially (probably to around 1200-1400 calories/day from 2000-2200/ day. I went from 5'9" 190 lbs, to 160lbs, and at one point I was 155 lbs.

However, I had lost all my muscle mass. Two months ago, I could barely run 1/2 a mile. Now, I've been running 3-4 times/week and can do 3 miles pretty easily, and am gaining muscle again.

moral of the story is just fucking do it. stop contemplating the nuances of weight-loss and exercise, doing so will only make you more idle and fatter. it's not rocket science, eat less and run more /thread.

OP here... good point. Don't know why I expected /fit/ to be magically free of trolls. I guess I thought they were alwyas magnetized to /b/ or something.

Anyway, you're right. I haven't been "waiting" for a magic weight loss epiphany to start losing weight, though... I've already lost four pounds in the past two weeks--since I decided to stop being fat. I was just curious. I guess the answer is just trial and error... thanks for the advice, dudes.

The good eating habits you learned whilst you were on the diet, dumbass. Massive difference between eating for maintenance and eating for fat loss. Have fun losing fat without a caloric deficit from your diet.
>> Anonymous
His point is that he wants to change his eating habits permanently by changing his lifestyle rather than do something unsustainable like go on atkins or drop to a 3 calorie diet. This is a good idea. What tends to happen is that once people start a healthy diet and keep it for a few months...they actually like it. The idea of fast food starts to gross them out etc.

but OP, It is important to keep in mind that you can't lose weight simply by eating healthy. You do also have to eat less calories. This is substantially easier if you are eating healthy.

maybe try keeping a food log for a week. People are notoriously bad at estimating how much food they are eating(in both directions).

OP looks like my boyfriend. You even sort of dress like him so I want to help you <3

The easiest way to lose weight? Cut carbs and eat a shitton of protein. It's really not hard. You don't even have to completely cut out carbs, just eat as few as possible and ALWAYS have a serving of protein with them.

Lift weights. Even if you don't join a gym, you can buy weights at Target.

Also, sadly, lay off the beer. Drink G&Ts instead.
