So /fit/, I went to the gym today and this was my routine, does this sound good for a cardio workout to do 5 days a week? Possible improvements?

5-10 mins stretching/walking
2 miles on treadmill
1 mile on elliptical
2 miles on bike

needs more biking. honestly, biking for 2 miles is nothing... that's like 7 minutes.

you will have more fun biking outdoors anyway.

Truth.

Also, jog outdoors.

What's good mileage for biking to aim for?

Also, outdoors is full of trash (the human-kind) and creepy people, so I prefer the treadmill.

that's also true. i do triathlons and i hate biking and running indoors. fortunately, it's possible to run outside even in -15 degree weather during the winter. not possible to ride in that kind of weather, though :( the wind from biking just freezes you.

this topic calls for more cyclocross.

in the long run, probably 25-30 miles. short run, you should be able to do at least 10 miles (30 minutes or so).

the good thing about biking is that it's low-impact. if your aim is to lose weight, you should be checking your heart rate while biking (most stationary have them directly on the bikes). you want to keep your heart rate in "zone 1" - that is, at about 70% of your maximum heart rate. basically, consistency is the goal.

if it doesn't have a heart rate monitor, the rule of thumb is that

a) being out of breath; and/or
b) your heart/lungs hurting too much

should not force you to stop biking. it should be that your legs have SLOWLY been worn down - so, 30-60 minutes.

I go through a 5 mile route with my roommate to school and back, this takes me about 25 mins. On weekends we do a 12 mile route to a beach, which will land me just over an hour. Both of these feel like a pretty good work out, I obviously wouldn't recommend 12 miles 5 days a week, but shoot for over 5.

On the bike or by foot?

The thing is, I don't want to bike just during my workout, so I like to spread it between the treadmill, elliptical and stairmaster

Biking, it sounds slow, but I don't rush myself.

It really depends on your bike too how much you can ride.
I do 30 miles plus on weekends and don't feel anything afterwards.
A good saddle and lightweight (baby) bike help a lot.

well, hey, in my base weeks (i.e., when i'm building up aerobic base) i was doing about 320-350 miles a week... so 5x12 miles shouldn't be that much of a problem ;)

pic very related.

oh, haha, that's for running.

yeah, that makes a lot more sense. i was going to say that you must also be doing 5 miles in 25 minutes on a crappy $100 mtb!

OP again...

I am not trying to become a cyclist here. Thread instantly turned into biker thread lul

Just asking about general cardio workouts on machines at gym with biking included

It's not about miles, it's about time.

Normally I go to the gym for an hour - two hours everyday of the week minus weekends
