are protein shakes really that helpful for muscle building? Also am i ment to drink them after a work out or before?

taking it with the meal before and after would be optimal.

it helps alot, but don't think it will substitute real food.

thanks, actually i dont often eat before i go to the gym, should i? i eat enough to give me the energy 2 carry on but thats about it. (so maybe a sandwich and a quick drink)

well, you shouldn't eat just before you workout but you should have a meal before (about 1 hour and a half before) to keep your energy up. so have a p-shake with that meal.

Depends what you are taking.
Stuff like Whey Isolates is taken just after workouts, to aid in rapid muscle development.
