Start exercising.

Strangly enough I had gathered that already.

My question is, what exercises are the most effective for working this region of the body?

You mean the upper body?

start with push-ups if you're kinda weak. do as many push-ups as you can in two minutues then rest for two minutes then repeat.

lifting weights, benchpressing, pullups, and dips really help.

If it makes your muscles hurt, you're probably doing something right. Or, you're doing something horribly wrong, and you'll probably end up seeing a doctor.

But as>>62740said, pretty much just start out with pushups and light weights (anything you can do around 3 sets of 8), and try out any other form of weightless exercise you'd like. Avoid cardio, though; it burns away calories, protein, then fat, then muscle. So, if you're not eating significantly more calories than you're burning in your cardio, it's counter-productive to your body building. Just bulk up on a bunch of muscle and a little fat, then go cardio-crazy to burn all the fat off.

Personally, I'd recommend doing pushups and pullups until failure every day, atleast once a day. Don't hurt yourself, though. If you want to build abs, the most effective exercise I've tried without weights is to hang from a bar like I'm going to do a pullup, and simply bring my knees to my chest. Yes, it is crazymadmotherfucking hard to do when you start.

If you have any questions about specifics, just ask. But try to ask more specifically.

Related to my interestz - do you do pushups and stuff like that as often as possible? I've heard/read that every other day is the best schedule for muscle growth.
