hey /fit/
ive heard different sides to this, so im asking what you guys think. when it comes to cardio, i have read that HIIT is a very good form of cardio when it comes to losing fat, thats almost undeniable. however, i have heard that using HIIT instead of long cardio (ie 60 minutes of running) is not the best idea. I have read that HIIT is good for busting out of plateau's, but not as an everyday replacement for aerobic activity. what does /fit/ think? is cardio better for fat loss until you hit a plateau, then HIIT till out of the plateau, then back to cardio? can you do both at once? if so, how?

pic unrelated and random

Run interval days and long run days, with a rest between each. This trains your fast twitch muscles as well as your raises your lactic acid tolerance. Intervals should be brief, but very intense. About a mile of 1 minute sprint/1 minute slow jog cooldown is enough. If you're going to vary your sprint time, make sure it's attainable for yourself with a rest interval of equal or less time than your sprint. That's what you're shooting for in intervals.

For your long runs, pick a distance of 3 miles plus (if you're a regular runner, 4 to 5 miles is a better idea). Just run it easy, no need to push too far past your comfort zone. You should feel like you're ALMOST uncomfortable. Slowing down isn't a big deal.

Honest, just doing straight intervals every other day will burn the fat just as good. Just couple that with a healthy diet and you'll lose weight in no time.

What's your short-term goal right now? Fat loss? Busting through a plateau? Maintenance? Muscle gain?

Almost forgot, your interval sprint should feel like a SPRINT, not a fast run. You should be going all out, as if each is your last. The feeling you're shooting for is a sudden burn in your thighs; once you get that feeling, you're at the speed you need to be. Hold that for the rest of your interval, or do your best to. For these you should feel like you're going to throw up.

what about HIIT + weightlifting? long distance running hinders muscle growth doesnt it?
>> Anonymous
>>177597
same poster here, HIIT for cutting, weightlifting for the muscle building + bonus metabolism boost

true, but muscle growth isnt as important if you are trying to lose weight as your main goal, amirite? as long as you keep your muscle, and lose fat, thats what hiit is for (i think)

15-20 minutes of HIIT should make you want to keel over and die. if you don't feel like that, you're doing it wrong.

Just do some fucking squats. Next question.

from what ive read HIIT is the best fat burning method no doubt , there is also the increased metabolism boost for the next 20 hours too, so i figured that coupled with weightlifting (increases metabolism too) would = awsome for cutting off that bit of fat covering my 6pack + gaining definition at the same time

ps while eating healthy of course 6 small meals / day

and yes i have the time to do this, done this for the last 8 days (haveing a few months off work, body repairs really fast)

You shouldn't be doing cardio everyfucking day regardless.

Weight loss is 80% diet.

>cutting off that bit of fat covering my 6pack + gaining definition at the same time
aren'tt weight loss (caloric deficit) and muscle gain (caloric surplus) opposing goals?
i seriously don't know lol

I usually do 15 minutes of HIIT Mon, Wed, Fri, then 30 minutes on the treadmill on Tues and Thurs.

Wonderful burn is wonderful.

pretty sure HIIT is the best for fat loss, period -- at least that's what all the information i've read has told me. the only case regular cardio is better is for endurance, not losing fat. you can do both at once, but i'm pretty sure it's generally suggested to not do it within the same day, but alternate.

correct me if this is incorrect

the key point is which exercise burns more calories. doing endurance cardio for 3 hours will burn more than 10 minutes of HIIT.

the main difference between endurance cardio and HIIT is that you burn more calories in endurance cardio than in HIIT during the actual exercise...but, most of the calories burned from HIIT come after the exercise itself as it results in an increased metabolic rate for 20-24 hrs afterwards. If properly done, HIIT everyday will give better results than daily endurance cardio...that's very tough though

I'm pretty sure most people only do HIIT two or three times per week and have lost more weight than doing cardio every day.
