For a few days now, i've had this sore on the side of my tongue. I don't specifically remember accidently biting it, but that's what it feels like happened. The sore is pretty far back and because of where it is, it is constantly irritating by my teeth, and the slightest movement of my tongue hurts. Also because of where it is, it seems to be taking longer than usual to heal (due to constant irritation)

Anybody have remedies for these sorts of sores? My mom jokingly suggested toothache medicine but I don't want to numb it. I hate numbness.

Pic not related of course.

Sounds like a mouth ulcer (canker sore). I get them chronically because of my acid reflux disease, but everyone can get them.

I use listerine (or any mouthwash like that) twice a day on it. I also carry around those spray listerine things, it helps a lot and will help make it go away.

Yep theyre a bitch. I just got through one that was on the side of my mouth near the back of my throat. Sucked.

Probably just a canker sore, I'd say give it a week or two and if it persists ask a doctor.

My mom is emigrated here to the US from Eastern Europe 50 years ago, and brought all these crazy home remedies with her.

If I asked her this question, she would say undoubtably that you need to swish your mouth with salt water. As salty as you can stand.

I am not sure I would agree with it, given that I don't know if this is the kind of sore that salt water would drive to insane levels of pain. But in times I have done it, whether by real or placebo, salt water mouthwash seems to do the trick.

Yeah I forgot to suggest that too. It works as well, I just cant stand the god damn taste so I just do the listerine.

Yup, they sound like canker sores. I get them from a specific brand of toothpaste or whenever I'm really stressed. Go to the dentist, they can prescribe a topical steroid that clears them up in a day. I always had them and tried absolutely everything. The steroid cures them almost overnight. I seriously recommend checking them out.

As a side note, for people who get these sorts of sores chronically, you might look at your toothpaste ingredients. It's been shown that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), an industrial foaming agent put in most all toothpastes, causes some people to constantly have mouth ulcers/canker sores.

I'm one of them, myself. I used to have one at least every other week or so, sometimes two at once. I found out about the SLS reaction and switched to a different toothpaste without it and now it is *very* rare for me to have a mouth ulcer; usually it's from biting my cheek or something now.

Two suggestions are either Rembrandt's Canker Sore toothpaste, or you can search google for "Uncle Harry's Tooth Powder". I use the tooth powder myself but I'd kinda like to go back to the Rembrandt toothpaste.

Some people will suggest Toms of Maine, but don't buy it; Toms of Maine has SLS in it and I had problems with it, too, as good a toothpaste as it is otherwise.

Also, when I would get them, I'd manually rub salt in to them. It hurt like fuck but I think it made them heal faster. If nothing else, the rackingly intense pain released lots of endorphins to numb it out :P

Or maybe I just got off on the pain on some level. I'd do it two or three times in a row usually, a couple times a day.
