hey /fit/, I just started lifting about 2 weeks ago and was wondering how soon it takes to start seeing some results. I've been running almost every day for about 3 years now, usually for about 3 miles or so, but decided to start strength training because I'm a stick (5 9, 135 pounds). Is there a time frame where I can start seeing results? My lifting partner said if we keep going every other day, around 5 weeks I should start seeing some development, and then again after 6 months or so. Also, how much should I be bench pressing, right now I'm at 105, but I have no idea what types of goals are reasonable.

Your strength will go up very rapidly in the beginning due to neural adaptation

once this starts to slow down you will begin to gain muscle

gains in size will come slowly at first because you aren't coordinated enough to lift the weight required to stress muscle fibers

focus on exercise technique and getting your low rep (3-6) weight up

thanks, I have a good lifting partner who is fairly large and has pretty good technique, so he lets me know what I'm doing wrong and how to improve on it. As for low rep, should I be doing more weight less, or just going for 3 sets of 10 with moderate weight. I'm not looking to become a bodybuilder here, just get a little toned.

More weights less reps, always. Also, don't automatically trust your friend on lifting technique, research for you own. Compound lifts, hit them hard.
