I read this (http://nymag.com/health/features/46213/) article about walking barefoot.

So I dug up my old wrestling shoes and went jogging. I used to get shin splints after 20 minutes on the concrete around here with cushioned shoes, but with the wrestling shoes I was able to jog for about 90 minutes (using calf muscles to cushion, not heel). Only downside is I can't use my calves right now, but they'll adjust. It also felt so much better to run properly instead of kicking at the ground with my heels.

Is this cool y/n?

I used to run in my converse.
Shit sux for joints.

I don't think humans were meant to run for a long ass time.

But I agree on the walking stuff somewhat.

Actually, they were.

Ahh wrestling shoes...

Well, converse have a pretty thick and somewhat rigid sole, so you kind of get the bad of the running shoe without enough cushioning to compensate. Wrestling shoes are basically a thin piece of rubber with fabric on top so they're quite flexible.

The main thing is to run TOE-heel and not HEEL-toe as you would in a cushioned shoe. Let the calf muscles take care of the impact instead of a clumsy inch thick sole.

I'm using my Onitsuka Tigers.

If it worked in the 70's, it must work now, am I right?

Thats the most retarded thing ever, no one runs on toes except when you're full-out sprinting. The only other time toe-walking is acceptable is if you're hunting and you don't want to make any noise.

Just finished reading the entire article, it's pretty interesting. I've been walking like how they suggest for a long time already, but with regular shoes. This is exciting, now I want some Vivo Barefoots, they look pretty cool. I have a pair of wrestling shoes from high school, but I don't really want to walk around in those.

I don't mean running on the tips of the toes. TOE-heel is just a shorter form of BALLOFTHEFOOT-heel. That is the ONLY way you can run without cushioning on hard ground, otherwise every time your heel strikes the ground it sends shockwaves through the whole leg.

>>88823

Just try taking off your running shoes and using HEEL-toe on concrete, does not work.

>>88830

Ok thanks for clearing that up, I thought you were one of those actual toe-walking hippy retards that I see outside.

>>88831
I know that.

ran in flat shoes and got severe ankle pain after only 5 miles

bought some real running shoes (fucking expensive ones at that) and now i can go up to 13 miles

Those Vivo shoes look pretty cool because I like little to no sole to my shoe.

But fuck, 150 bucks?

This thread is now about Vibram FiveFingers. Welcome to earlier this week.

I so want some. Should I?

Doing a lot of double-under jump rope barefoot will help a lot with calf endurance/strength, but it'll hurt like a bitch if you whip your toes. So, be careful.

>>88831
>Just try taking off your running shoes and using HEEL-toe on concrete, does not work.

Wow, cool. People are finally agreeing with me!

>>88895
You will.

The Five Fingers would be nice if they didn't look so retarded.

And the Vivo's are expensive and all out of stock.

Maybe I should look into Nike Free?

Actually, human evolution was led by the demands of our species to travel long distances rapidly, i.e. running. Large glutens maxiumus, "S" shaped spine, huge calves, etc - all conducive to endurance running. Born to run, one might say. While lifting and HIIT is generally more applicable to today's physical demands, anyone who doesn't believe endurance running (+5k distances) isn't a part of the human agenda is probably a fat fuck.

>>88821
I lol'd. Unless you're sprinting, the running economy of the toe-heel technique is inefficient. Essentially,>>88823= truth.

Anyway, I run with Merrells (climbing shoes; designed so that you can hike for days straight without feeling anything) with gel insoles. Padded from here to Mars, and while I typically run for no more than 30 minutes of HIIT or 18 minutes of a 5k, I have no problems.

If you've got some serious money, go for Newtons.

They still have the technology of modern running shoes (which Nike Free and the Vibrams do not), but are designed to encourage midfoot/forefoot striking.

But, Heel-->Toe is the best method for distance running.

I wish I could find it, but there was some study where they tried to convert a bunch of heel distance runners to the forefoot, and they all ended up incapacitated after the first week due to its nature; the toe is for sprinting and short distances most definitely.

Climbing shoes are thin and flexible like "barefoot" shoes, but they are usually pointed at the end to get footholds in tight places, so THEY CROWD YOUR TOES. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO YOUR POOR TOES?

So how did Abebe Bikila win the 1960 Olympic marathon barefoot?
>> Anonymous
>>89299

I'm not saying it's not possible (though now, to keep up with the 2:05 pace, I bet it wouldn't be). I'm saying the new running shoes allow for the use of the more efficient stride (for distance) of heel-toe.

And if you look at shoes back then, they were crap in terms of support and technology. Distance running for sport was still relatively new (around 40-60 years) and the shoe technology had just not caught up to the athletes.

Funny thing though, when Bikila was able to get shoes the next year, he didn't run barefoot, he ran in shoes. The only reason he didn't wear them that year was Adidas (the shoe sponsor) ran out by the time his race came around.

You mean like this?

>>89207
If you go your entire life without exposing your calves to the repetitive absorption forces of running, then no shit it's not going to be fun if you don't start acclimating slowly. All of the muscles in your foot arch, ankles, and calves will be severely atrophied and the tendons will be weak. However, after a few weeks of adapting to a forefoot strike, you'll be painfree for the rest of your time running, whereas with heel-toe, you can easily get shin-splints or severe knee pain regardless of how long you've been running.

we also have to move fast to get away from angry things. the idea that it was one to the exclusion of the other makes you a fucking retard.

i stopped running heel to toe and i can go further and faster.

Anyone know if you can get either the vibram fivefingers or vivo barefoot in australia?

Contact "Max72" on these boards to get some Vibrams:

Tokidoki is getting together with them to make some tigers. I'm not a weaboo but the black ones look pretty cool. The vibrams look neat but would go to waste, imo, if you didn't just live in those things.

>>89181

Perhaps Heel-toe is more efficient for long distances, I don't know, but that's a moot point for me since I can't use it on concrete even with good running shoes. Since I run for fitness and not to race, I'll stick with toe-heel from now on.

Fuck you anon, I can't make up any sense of how I should jog/run for cardio now.

Has anon some kind of graphs or vids with the safest way to run/jog ?

Lol, my coach used to make the team and I run in our wrestling shoes, it hurt like balls.

Wrestling Shoes = no arch support

Go get some real running shoes if you really want to be hardcore.
