Sup /fit/,

I have access to a junior olympic length pool and also a 30 foot pool. The 30 foot is for adults only, and is much more classy, but the other one is obviously longer (kids swim in it, though).

Which would be better to begin swimming laps in? I really want to start a swimming routine as I hear it's far more effective/better for your heart than running.

Also, can you give me a little bit of structure as to how i should train towards longer workouts or more laps?

A 30 foot pool? That's backyard length dude. If you want to swim laps, go to the longer pool.
