HANDSTANDS Anonymous
Alright /fit/

How do I slowly work myself up to a handstand?

I'm a girl and can do about 5 guy push-ups, but have terrible balance. Being able to successfully do a handstand is one of my goals in life.

What muscles should I target (I have access to a gym), and what excercises do you recommend?

Pic related.

Lose weight if you're a chubbo. That is the first step, fer srsly.

Beside this, try to handstand against the wall. I use two close walls and kick off one wall into a handstand but you can just flip up if you're able. Until you're able to spend time against the wall, vertical, you'll probably have a hard time doing a freestanding handstand.

Alrighty. I've done this before, but with help.
Also, I can balance myself on my hands when I lock my elbows in my knees. I don't know what it's called, but I'm assuming then that my wrists are strong enough.

It's a frogstand, its like a pseudo planche. You could do those just for in general ab strength and to help the stabilization muscles for freestanding but try getting against the wall for time and also making yourself offbalance by leaning your legs left or right and tense up to bring yourself center (not too much, just wriggling around and having to stabilize will help).

Try to do a handstand pushup when you're up against the wall. Don't try to go too low or you'll fall on your head because the required muscles probably aren't highly developed.

And keep a cushion under you.

More push-ups, more military and bench presses. As for balance, just find a narrow hallway, turn upside down, and push off each wall each time you lose your balance. Eventually you'll get the hang of keeping your handstand up.

My sister can barely do any pushups. But she can still handstand against a wall and do a small handstand pushup.

No U!

Handstands are nothing but a balance issue for me. I can get into the position and hold it for no more than like, 5 seconds MAX.

I've never considered myself to be too strong.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WORKING MUSCLES OR SHIT. If you're doing what I think you are you just need to stop being a pussy and do it. You need to push yourself over a certain point, and you'll feel it happen and just hold your weight on your hands and arms till you drop back down again.

There's no such thing as guy push-ups or girl push-ups. There's only REAL push-ups or silly knee push-ups.

Now I teach gymnastics to kids so the concept should apply hear. Tighten every muscle in your body and point your toes straight up. DON'T look down at the ground or infront of you, look behind you (meaning look in the direction you normally would with the top of your head facing the ground). Make sure your keep your shoulders against your ears while going down and keep stiff arms.

If you want a more breakdancing type hand stand, you'll need more core strength and sense of balance between shifting your weight from one side to the other while managing to keep your legs bent as a counter balance. Not really orthodox but certainly easier to handstand run in or grab your grab a leg for extra style points.
