Hey /fit/, first time poster.

I started a simple pushup regimen several weeks ago and was impressed with the results, so i'm looking to expand into a few more workouts. My problem is i've always been borderline underweight (a combination of diet and genes), and even moderate workouts causes me to start dipping to unsafe weight levels.

I know i'll have to start eating more, but what kind of foods should I be looking into? Does it make a difference that I'm starting underweight? Lastly, should I avoid cardio until I put on more weight?

protein, and more protein. Eggs, peanut butter, protein shakes, meat of all kinds, milk, yogurt, cheese, most nuts, beans.
Eat a lot of that shit. If you are starting from being underweight than you need to worry less about eating clean or lean and more about eating a fucking lot of protein.

Of course if you can eat A FUCKING LOT of lean protein that's also good. But eating some fat won't kill you. Unlike these fat people. and its better that you eat a lot of whatever protein you can find than that you don't eat enough. Eat until it hurts and then keep eating. Eat every few hours. Eat Eat Eat Eat. You think you do, but you don't. keep a journal for a week. My guess is like most skinny people you often eat a lot in a one meal but you space your meals erratically often only eating one very major meal a day.

I was you 6 months ago. The good news my friend is that you will become very attractive with a very moderate work out program as long as you remember to fucking eat.

You won't SQUAT 500lbs and all of /fit/ will tell you that you look like a weak pussy. But even minuscule muscle gains will be rapidly noticeable and the bitches will love it.
