So I just joined a gym and I realise they don't have any barbells (Wtf?). Is there a way to do squats with only dumbells?

Thanks

You can replace squats with leg press and deadlifts with leg curls.

hold the dumbbells on your shoulders for squats. sit them on the ground to each side of you and squat down to pick them up if you want it more similar to a deadlift

if it doesnt have barbells its a girls gym man

My fitness trainer said you could.

Not everyone likes to look like a weightlifter...

I'm a member of a girl's gym (Bannatyne's) and even they have a barbell.

Op here. I'll try this. Any other suggestions? I might just buy a barbell to use at home.

Yes, I'm sure a random, anonymous poster on the Internet knows more than a professional physical trainer.

Give me a break.

Squats are most certainly better. But the "elitism" about them, if you will, is far more widespread than it should be. If you do leg presses instead of squats, you'll still grow. Anyone who says otherwise is pretty much an idiot.

I don't believe you joined a gym, enjoy paying some man to stand in his basement and pretend to exercise.

Dumbbell squats. You hold them down by your sides, not on your shoulders like someone recommended earlier.

that's a bad example, the guy's knees are extending waaaaaaaaaay past his ankles which is bad for your knees

jesus christ, I don't think I can trust exrx anymore after seeing that

He has a page on squat safety, backed up with delicious scientific studies. They recommend the knees going forward as much as the hips go back to balance the load.

yeah my gym doesn't have barbells either, god damned ripoff. 10 bux a month for unlimited access but they only have one guy at the check in and no other staff, and trust everyone not to hurt themselves on all the nautilus equipment they got... Too many people fucking themselves up with bad form on the barbells i guess.
>> Anonymous
buy your own fucking weights if the gym doesn't have barbells and leave that shit asap.

10 bucks a month and you wonder why they have no barbells. Join a real gym and you're gonna be paying closer to 40-50 bucks a month

10 bucks a month is really really cheap.
Seriously though, what DOES your gym have that isn't used for aerobocis?

grats on not being able to read.

>Generally speaking, during a powerlift type squat (bar lower behind the shoulders and a wider stance) the knee does not travel forward as far as a bodybuilding type squat. The hips typically travel back further with the torso bent forward on a powerlift type squat. This emphasizes the stronger hip extensors and adductors and consequently reduces knee extensor involvement. Knee torque is further reduced by a wide stance.
