Once again it's the Americans to come rescue you ignorant europeans from your idiocy. Bareknuckle boxing at first glance seems to be rougher than modern boxing, because of the lack of padding. But the lack of padding is what caused those BKB rounds to go to over 100 rounds without anyone scoring a knockout. With the introduction of gloves, boxers were now allowed to go full force in their punches without worrying about breaking their hands, leading to an increase in deaths and KO's. And the same holds true with American football. The protective equipment allows athletes to become bigger and stronger than their rugby counterparts, and deliver smashmouth contact not seen on the rugby field.
TL;DR - Rugby players are afraid of injuring themselves to deliver hits that American football players do regularly.
