/fit/ my calves have been tightening up at night and waking me up in severe pain.

I exercise everyday-- biking usually, (soon to be replaced by running) along with weights 3x a week.

Whats causing my calves to tense up? And... any one know what can help?

STRETCH YOUR FUCKING CALVES.

STRENGHEN YOUR SHINS.

Well, in that case, read the second sentence.

Stretch only after you've warmed up a little bit. If you're stretching cold muscles, you could cause more problems. This might be the cause.

Also, potassium. You need more of it. Eat some bananas.

I eat avocados which are also high in potassium (if not higher)...

Do they have potassium supplements? I take magnesium, but I haven't ever looked for potassium.

I used to get exactly what you had. When you tense your calf to the point it feels it's going to hernia, rite?

This was around the same time I was cycling every day too. It was inconsistent for me but I usually reconciled by having a long stretch down after cycling, then a red hot shower and a second stretch down before bed.

Yes, there are potassium supplements (I have some). You didn't mention how/when you're stretching though. Honestly, it makes a big difference. Especially when...

What do you mean "how"?
I stretch after I cycle and after I lift weights.

Yeah. Hurts like a bitch.

I was mostly wondering when (you said after) you stretched and how (as in what types, order (which can be important sometimes), how long you hold the stretches, are you going too far... it should only be enough to feel a pull on the muscle... farther can encourage injury). Etc. etc. etc. etc. on "how"

I stretch my legs first usually. I dont know any names for stretching, but normally work my way down my leg in terms of the muscles I stretch. Hold each for at least 30 seconds. I sometimes dont feel any stretching-- I have very flexible legs.
