I've been wanting to help my parents get /fit/ for a while now in fear of their health and just for their general happiness.
My dad is 53 but could be mistaken for lower 40s if he didn't have a big gut.
My mom 50, short and stout (flabby) and has a bad knee (which would either complicate or by helped by exercise).
Both are pretty weak at this point and have very low stamina. What are some good things to get them started? Mainly I am looking to help them lose weight (fat), gain functional strength (though based on my dad's build I think he could be quite strong), and gain stamina.
Keep in mind I'm looking for ways to start them off... not really the same advice you would give the average fat kid coming over from /b/ and giving his info and asking "wat do I do?". There is a very real possibility that too much starting off could give either of my parents a heart attack.

besides being fat they both look pretty young for their age. Of course they couldn't get "fit" by the standards you would hold a 20 year old kid to, but you can't just say they can't make improvements.

Tell them to swim, I'm a lifeguard at a local pool and we get tons of geezers that come to swim laps. They fuckin' love it for whatever reason.

Anyway... if they aren't into swimming, maybe they can buy some comfort/cruiser bikes and ride the local trails/state parks and go and experience the area they live in... unless you guys live in an urbanized area. They could get a dog or two and walk 'em to the dog park.

The easiest thing to do is to get them into fitness slowly, not all at once - get them to go walking for 10mins a day and gradually do more time/distance. This is what my friends mom has been doing for a few years, works for her.
