About how much water should you drink in a day, and what happens if you drink too little or too much (if that's possible)?

Overdone question is overdone.

Its estimates that your kidneys can process about 950ml an hour depending on how well your kidneys are functioning.

Not drinking enough can lead to dehydration and cause tissue damage.
Drinking too much can lead to thinning your blood.

Both are equally as bad, so you need to find that happy middle ground.

Err also drinking too much can cause kidney damage.

False. The only way to drink too much water, is if you are severely dehydrated for a prolonged period of time and then drink a large quantity of water at once.

You just pee out excess water normally. The clearer your urine is, the better hydrated you are. Unless you have excess vitamin B which your body just pisses out and makes your pee bright yellow. Pic related.

You're retarded. A girl in the states drank 2-3L of water in one sitting an attempt to win a Wii. Guess what happened? Bitch died.

You can thin your blood effectively drowning yourself.

...so what happened to the Wii?

I'm not really sure what happened to the Wii. o-O; They hopefully gave it to the family of the girl who died.

>>Drinking too much water can eventually cause your brain to swell, stopping it regulating vital functions such as breathing, and causing death.

Huh...

reason: she washed away her electrolytes. simple as that.

Any one stupid enough to drink past the point where their body says "no more" deserves to die.

Holy fuck, someone posted a reference in /fit/? UNPOSSIBLE!

what? no, you can force yourself to drink too much. too much water can cause your brain to swell, mimicking the symptons of being drunk and leading to death.

fluid intake is dependent on activity level and environment.
sedentary and cool: 2-3 liters per day
active and cool: 3-6
sedentary and warm: 3-5
active and warm:5-10+
being a desert dweller myself, I can tell you that fluid intake should NOT be underestimated!

I remember this. THis woman did not die from drinking too much water. She died because she couldn't go to the bathroom, as the contest rules stated. Hence the "Hold your wee..." Eh, I figure everyone who is that old (mid-20s) and doesn't know that you can die from this is asking for it. Stupidity on the part of the radio station and the participants equally.

This is a pretty common occurrence. People are stupid and don't realize that it's possible to overdose on anything.

>>Water enters the body when we drink and is removed primarily in the urine and sweat. The amount of water in the body is regulated to control the levels of certain compounds, such as salt, in the blood.

>>If you drink too much water, eventually the kidneys will not be able to work fast enough to remove sufficient amounts from the body, so the blood becomes more dilute with low salt concentrations.

Even if she did pee, the amount of water she drank could have caused her to die anyways. Your kidneys can only process so much water at a time, then they back up. Your body isn't like a damn that floods over, there's no where for the water to flood over once it enters your system, it just has to wait for its turn to be processed.

is... is that a little sprite from secret of mana?
because I feel like it is...

also I drink way more than the recommended 8 glasses, cool climate, not too active, still always thirsty. I'm fine.
>> salt. RSI guy !HjbWRiSTJ.
>>33840
death caused by .. a condition in which excess water in the body causes sodium levels in the blood to drop.

you need a pinch of salt per cup water. also called an electrolyte imbalance. that's the the thing that killed, the electrolyte (basically, salt) imbalance that killed. if only he some salt, he'd be alive.

salt.
