Anyway, this Ross Enamait guy has a lot of cool e-books out about "functional strength" and how its super awesome, but I don't see the difference of exercising for "function" as opposed to just general strength. im a total beginner when it comes to fitness so i had hoped someone here could clear up the issue.

Most modern bodybuilders have a routine that will improve muscle size, and strength, but training for FUNCTIONAL strength, will cause your muscles to grow less, but be more functional.


For example, a functional lifter might be able to curl, 80lbs.

Where someone lifting for size, might LOOK stronger, but be able to curl 60lbs.

Also, those figures are improvised.

Bodybuilders do focus on the lifting numbers, but where a functional lifter will list about 75-85% of his maximum just a few times, a bodybuilder who builds for looks/competition will lift about 60% between 12-16 times (usually) which causes the muscle to grow more, but functionality to progress more slowly.

Bodybuilders: Highish reps, high volume, high density, train to get hueg.

Power\oly lifters: train to get the biggest numbers on their fucking lift.

Functional strength (non marketing version): Developing a good power to weight ratio and efficient CNS. This means curling is not part of it, it's not functional, true functional strength is applicable to acrobats, breakdancers, gymnasts etc

Functional strength (marketing version): LULZ U DONT HAVE TO WORK HARD TO GET BIG CUZ UR FUNKSHONAL

Real functional strength is about body manipulation, for instance, the function is an iron cross on rings, strength has to be developed.
Maybe the function is flares on the floor, strength has to be developed

I think the closer definition would be power, which is strength and speed combined.

Also, bodybuilders do increase weight, and are very meticulous about it, but they do a lot of isolation movements, which do not train the stabilizing muscles.

So when the muscle is used outside of the lift, it isn't as effective as it could be.

okay, i understand what you mean when you talk about lifting to make the muscle grow, but what do you mean by function? can a functional guy who goes to the gym lift more than a size guy? they are both going to be increasing their lifting as time progresses, right? its not like the size lifter is getting muscles that cant lift weights, he gets them by lifting.

Functional strength = being able to pound a woman while holding yourself up with one hand for 20 minutes, using the other hand to caress her bottom and/or breasts

Functional strength = being able to lift a woman up and bounce her on your penis for 20 minutes

Functional strength = being able to do heavy lifting work outside for a few hours

Non-functional strength = looking big but not being able to lift anything that can't be lifted with a bicep curl movement for 5 minutes

yeah im training judo and boxing and looking for exercises that will work best with that. i found the ross guy as a result because he is a boxing dude.

anyway, functional training seems cool and all, but im not sure how to put it together in a system. ross just outlines several exercises but leaves it open as to how to integrate it into a workout.

All fighters imo, should be doing alot of hip\leg dominant work, lower back to, so these exercises are your base:
Clean
Snatch
Deadlift
Squat

From there, lots of variations.

Then, ontop of that, for judo you want grip strength, so plenty of forearm work (don't forget to do wrist curls AND grip work)

Then I guess you'll want just standard muscle workouts to build general strength, so chinups, barbell\dumbell rows, military press, bench press and any other sport specific exercises.

And by real strength, you mean very low body fat combined with small size. Yes, they're strong, but relative to their bodyweight. Compared to everyone else, they aren't that strong.

If a powerlifter cut off a bunch of body fat, they could probably do it as well.

Untrue, powerlifters haven't build up the muscle memory of a planche, or learnt how to activate all the muscles they need to at once, synergistically to do a planche.

That and they get alot weaker as they get skinnier, don't really understand why.

And yes, power:weight ratio will always be made bigger if you cut fucktonnes of fat, but doesn't mean you have to be tiny, you just have to be super lean and not carrying more weight that the bare minimum amount of muscle, check out gymnasts, first that comes to mind is yuri van gelder, dude's pretty fckin huge, and most of them are big-ish, but super ripped.

functional: watch a strong man contest (if you prefer absolute strength) or some hardcore bodyweight shit (if you prefer strength relative to bodyweight)

functional: being able to do stuff in 3 dimensions (exercises like squats, bench press, military press,etc.) it's functional because we live in a 3d world... so if youre doing shit like squats with a smith machine (which is only 2d), it won't be that applicable, say, if youre a fireman and youre doing a firemans carry on a heavy person because you won't be able to stabilize it
