Self Defense Pepe
Hey /fit/. a little background info- i'm 18 years old 5'6 and 116lbs. im going to college this fall and want to be able to defend myself. i got pushed around a lot in high school and dont want that happening in college.

i started working out about 2 or 3 months ago, maybe 2 or 3 times a week usually. not very serious i know, but the past week or so i have been working out every other day.

my question to you is should i stick with weight lifting and try to build muscle or should i try a martial art? the only choices i have are hapkido and taekwondo. no real experience with either.
note: ive never been in a fight in my life so i feel like even if i could get bigger it still might not even help.

buy a gun

i was planing on getting my concealed weapon permit later in life, but i would rather be able to defend myself without one.

That shit doesn't happen in college. If it does, buy a strait razor and fuck somebody up and you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Hapkido and TKD = useless bullshit with useless techniques, 6yo blackbelts and no live sparring.

Go to a boxing and wrestling school. Their techniques work and they practice them at live sparring. They don't have stupid fucking 6yo masterbelts, you have to work your ass out to be THE BEST. No fucking remembering of useless fucktard kata's.

buy a big dog and a gun.

Whoops, damn homophones.

Stop being paranoid.

And if you aren't paranoid, stop being a push-over.

If you aren't a push-over, and there is still a problem - work out, and I would take Taekwondo over Hapkido.

Honestly though, you must live in a shitty community for people to be such dicks to you unwarranted.

>my question to you is should i stick with weight lifting and try to build muscle or should i try a martial art?

Do both, and pick hapkido, and only if it's full contact training. I've had traditional korean bullshit hapkido where you're not allowed to hit each other hard, and then I had awesome Americanized self defense hapkido, basically it had an MMA feel and how you'd imagine aiki-jitsu to be.
>> HelpFag
Stop acting like a victim. Get some confidence and learn how to stand up for yourself.

Most martial arts that are taught these days are useless for actual fighting. Don't bother.

>> Anonymous
>>206520

Hapkido is Korean Aikido, dumbshit. The characters used to make up the name are the same, and it's the Korean way to pronounce it.

The difference is there's a shitton more striking to set up for OHSHITPAIN jointlocks. Efficient style. Go with it.

Type in "The Young Master final battle" in Google to see Jackie Chan get his ass handed to him by a Hapkido master.

PROTIP: in college, people are paying for tuition and don't care about finding nerds to pick on. you're in the clear!

kickboxing, brazilian jiu jitsu..
they're recommended for women's self defense anyway.

what college are you going to that you fear so much?

i never start fights with big guys because i know they could kick my ass. so if he is gonna be a fuckhead and try to kick my ass for no reason, yea probably

Conditioning matters more than techniques. As long as you're fit, and you know a few basic things, you should be more prepared.

And yeah, there are fights in college. Not on campus, but in parties shit gets out of hand.
>> Pepe
>>206544
im glad fucking somebody in this thread realizes that.

Does not happen on college, people in college tend to act like adults unless your dorming with frat boys or something.
>> Anonymous
Just stay with the crowd of nerds who would play video games at a party or stay with the Christian crowd who would have 1 guy who always brings a guitar and sings Christian songs, and you won't encounter any fighting.

College parties are fucking shit.

OP is naive and doesn't realize nobody gives a shit in college about the stuff they did in high school. Just doon't project nerd and smell like reject.

If you don't want to take up those martial arts then either
a)become XBAWKS HUEG but don't be aggressive
b)punch bag
I'm a black belt in Karate and now study self defence and BJJ and i've walked away from many arguements. THE BEST OPTION IS TO RUN THE FUCK AWAY.

Finding a good (asian) MA school is actually harder than the training, imo.

If you find one, however, you're golden. Even wuith stuff like Taiji, you can really kick some serious butt.

As a 5,4 guy at 135 lbs currently in college I can tell you, you won't have any trouble.

I trained in Taekwondo judo and traditional jiu-jitsu and I can tell you TKD is useless as a self-defense art. It was conceived as an olympic sport so it won't teach you self-defense.

Now i'm boxing and doing muay thai and these are some great self-defense tools.

In high school I hanged out with the football playing guys so I was never pushd around.

I was pushed around once by a guy in my design class and I can tell you, a straight hook to the liver droped him down then an elbow to the face made it clear as was not to be fucked with. Show the big guys you mean business and they won't fuck with you.
>> Anonymous
>It was conceived as an olympic sport so it won't teach you self-defense.

Wrong, it was made by korean generals as a means of unarmed combat in a war situation.

Still sucks for one on one conflict.

should have mentioned also that it was mades several hundred years ago, so don't associate war in this case with guns and tanks and shit.
>> Anonymous
>>206623
It was conceived by A general (choi hong hi) while he was in a japanese internment camp.

ITF TKD has high standards, you won't get a black belt in less than 10 years and to get there you'll have to have good sparring experience. There's some fairly versatile self-defence in the curriculum too.

Because it's so popular, shitty clubs give taekwon-do a bad name

>>206630
TKD is 53 years old

I hear you /b/rother. I am a bit taller than you and weigh 118. I didn't get pushed around though.. However I too start college in the Fall and I want to get big. DON'T DO TAE-KWON-DO!!! It's pretty much all cardio. Your skinny as fuck, you need to do as little moving around as possible. You need to eat a shitload of protein and work out so you don't gain much fat.
>> Anonymous
>>206637
Well, martial arts in general aren't good for gaining weight. And there's nothing wrong with cardio even if you're trying to get bigger
>> Anonymous
>>206646

You mean besides losing shit loads of calories? It's obvious he's a hard gainer, and as a hard gainer myself, any physical movements like running, playing basketball, can be the kiss of death for an entire day.
>> Anonymous
>>206714
As long as you eat a lot and do resistance training, cardio will just keep your fat down
>> Anonymous
5'6 and 116lbs doesn't sound that thin. I don't think gaining weight will stop you getting pushed around. Learn how to fight and become confident and strong in character
>> Anonymous
>Go to a boxing and wrestling school.

Then get your ass kicked when you discover sports aren't really fighting outside of UFC

>> Anonymous
>>206737
okay /fit/. Whats wrong with UFC. Do tell.
>> Anonymous
>>206745

UFC showcases sport fighting, for one. Secondly, for all those fags who doubt -ALL- the techniques or arts shown in the UFC or MMA in general -- shut the fuck up. Muay Thai/Boran was, and is, a devastating martial art which can be utilized to break bones and end lives easily and brutally. Wrestling gives someone core strength/power and can actually help you manipulate someone's body if, say, the fight ends up on the ground perhaps? Yeah? Maybe? Just thinking ..

Before you fags pick sides and go 'lol ufc' or 'lol china kung foo lol', view things objectively. Judo is a fucking sport mostly, but I doubt any of you would like to get thrown, head first, into the fucking concrete. I'd HATE to fight a Judoka in the street. They're capable of killing or paralyzing people in one throw.

>> Anonymous
>>206477

OP, if you really want to learn a good self defense art, try boxing or Japanese Jiujitsu. Wing Chun is also good for close range fighting and if you combine that with previous boxing experience, you'll be able to easily defend yourself. Judo is also good.

But, if you really want something fail-safe, try thinking about Krav Maga. It's a military martial art and from what I hear, it's pretty efficient.
>> Anonymous
>>206756
Thats not UFC.
>>206757
Yes, yes learning to fight is useless. Keep thinking that.
>> Anonymous
>>206493

>Hapkido and TKD = useless bullshit
Truth on many levels, sure it keeps you toned and helps in certain situations the problem is that both aren't practical in real fights.

>Go to a boxing and wrestling school. Their techniques work and they practice them at live sparring.

Again true, real fights start off with fists and after a few swings it ends up on the ground where submission rules. Learn how to grapple and learn the dirty tricks. (eye gouging, arm bars, pinky twisting)

>buy a big dog and a gun.

When all else fails.
>> Anonymous
>>206953
>pinky twisting
SMALL JOINT MANIPULATION IS VERY NAUGHTY AND WILL NOT BE TOLLERATED

Take boxing and wrestling.. be it BJJ or Thai boxing or western kickboxing or boxing.

The "techniques" if you could even call them that (boxing) are so natural and straight forward that you'll become a decent fighter fairly quickly, provided you train somewhat hard and have fairly decent instincts.

You pretty much need to learn how to keep your balance with a good guard and how to punch properly with useful combinations whilst maintaining said guard. Then you need to learn how to do that without thinking so you can let your instinct take over in a fight.

Basically... train hard, in a ring with someone of good caliber for a year and you'll be capable of holding your own against even decent fighters long enough to spot and opening and leg it.

Once you have a good guard, you can stand there and take punches all day (whilst guarding against takedown), until the opponent tires sufficiently, or until you spot a way to end the fight (be it running or finishing him off)

Street fighting is such an instinctual thing that taking an art full of technique and rule is going to slow you down. You just need to know how to guard and strike properly to minimise damage to yourself and maximise damage to the aggressor.
