/fit/, I have a fitness goal. I want to fit into size 6 jeans (currently size 8-10, 5'8"). There's one thing really holding me back.

I have "exercising in public" phobia. Mostly because I get beet red in the face, and I obviously am not the greatest runner/jogger ever.

I live in an apartment, so buying a treadmill or something is out. There is a gym at my college but the same phobia applies.

Help?

I'll take a cognitive stab at this one...

Run anyways. If you change the behavior, an attitude change usually follows. Bring an mp3 player or something to drown everybody out if you need to. You're doing this for yourself, not everybody else - so fuck 'em. If it's possible, find a semi-isolated track near a river or through a park or something, so that there aren't as many people around. I personally like to do my running at night, which means there's even less people about.

You could also take up running with a good friend - having that support there and jogging at a talking pace is a good way to get into it. You're not going to get better until you start, and the only thing really preventing that is you. If you really want to succeed, you'll have to realize this. Good luck,

Channel the phobia into a drive to get more healthy. Go out an exercise every day with the goal of NOT LOOKING LIKE A SHITDIP while exercising.

I guarantee you that nobody likes how they look while exercising, and nobody can just up and jog 7 miles a day non-stop outta nowhere. We all have to start somewhere.

If you're a pussy, though, go for jumping jacks, high rep bodyweight exercises (squats, pushpus, burpees), or any of those gimmicky aerobic/tae bo video workouts. The only requirement is that you get your heartrate up to its target, at least.

Get a friend to join you.

Or alternatively, buy a bike-trainer. Not too big.

I'm 5'8", 320 lbs, and a humongous % body fat.
If _I_ can manage to get my ass in the gym every day, you can too.

Good for you

How about confronting your irrational phobia instead of just going along with it? A mental state is only a mental disorder when you allow it to adversely affect your life. Get your fat ass outside and jog.

Absolutely, well said and good luck.

Bunch of goddamn pussies, worried about looking like they're exercising - shit, people would think higher of you seeing you like that, all contorted, red and sweaty - than sitting in a comfy seat of your disgusting fat, content with another take out meal being shoved into your craw.

iawtc.

They're probably too busy thinking about their own calories spent and the hot guy next to you to worry about what you look like.
What's the worst they can think of you "OH WOW THAT GUY GETS RED IN THE FACE LOLOLOL" or "OH WOW, THAT GUY SURE IS OUT OF BREATH OOOOOOOOL"... I still think that's better than not exercising. :<

run stairs at night

85% of the people that might look at you funny will be fat, out of shape, and probably chowing down on a hamburger or some other shitty food

Go run anyway. Whenever I see someone out of shape/overweight exercising I think a mental "good for you" and that's about it. People aren't going to look down on you for exercisig.

had the same phobia when I started. I couldn't run very far and I felt like people would think I was pathetic. But yes, as anon suggested MP3 player is awesome. Also try gym first before running outside. I dont know but for some reason it was easier to get over it in the gym, probably because everyone else was focusing on what they were doing and you are one of many rather than running outside where people are walking and like to look at someone who is running because they are running and that is different.

Also remember, one thing that helped me alot was improvement. If you can tough it out for a couple sessions you will feel yourself getting better and that will make you feel better about exercising

Can anybody link to pages showing proper form for these?
I throw my back out every time I try doing crunches so I think I am doing a lot of stuff wrong... :(

Someone said this yesterday on here, and it's the smartest fucking thing I think that's ever come out of /fit/:

If I see a 400lb guy in the gym working his ass off to change that I have complete and utter respect for him.

If I see a 400lb guy sitting on his couch eating a triple baconator blaming genetics, I have no respect for him.

Don't be afraid to go to the gym. I was too until I started going.

yea that pretty much sums it up. I dont really like fat people but those at the gym are cool with me.

Do it. For your own good.

campus gyms are amazing.... make sur you ask someone who appears to know what they're doing how to do a given exercise if you are at all unsure (even for simple things like benching, squats, and erg machines)
>> rowerfag !1NK2XEqfVo
also, in about 4 hours i can post my body weight exercise copypasta.... it's really intimidating to look at if you aren't big into exercise, but it'll get you into shape in no time

Chances are people at the gym won't actually give a shit if your face goes red or not.

When I'm at the gym I specifically look for overweight people and stand in front of them and laugh while they are on the treadmill, bike whatever.

It's awesome playing havoc with your self image.

to me it seems the ultimate goal of some women is to fit into size 0 pants. just add the number 18, or sometimes 20 to it, then you get the real measurement in real inches.

thank god men's clothes just use real numbers. so much simpler.
