Hey /fit/ I've been doing a bit of boxing training. Except it's really not. I've just been going bouts with wooden walls with a thin pair of gloves on. I've been doing shadow boxing. But I'm missing something....

I come to you /fit/ for advice. I need techniques; I've already got the punch, punch, punch, uppercut, punch, punch thing down but thats not enough. Please /fit/ help me.

Also whats a good painkiller cause my fist sting.

You're training wrong.
You don't just decide you want to learn how to box one day, buy gloves and start punching walls.

Find yourself a coach before you start doing the technique wrong, takes a minute to make a mistake, but it could take a year to fix, you start teaching yourself the wrong technique now, you're going to be stuck with it for a while.

Boxing's not just about punching either, you need to do roadwork and increase your overall fitness rather than just focusing on hitting.

so help me god if im feeding a troll. also a tip, JOIN BOXING dont just do it on your own cuz then you'll be doing it wrong. and a tip to make your hands sting less, dont go into a bout with a wooden board.

OP here. If I jumped at someone on a bridge they'd probably just roundhouse kick me in the face and be on their way so no I'm not a troll.

The problem with me finding a trainer is I live in the middle of fucking nowhere. Mid-western Kansas; It's as bad as you think. I do go to drill once a month for The National Guard though so I guess that'd be a good place to start, amirite? Also would wood cutting for an hour or two a day be a good workout?

Choppin logs works the trapz pretty well if I'm not mistaken.

Don't underestimate roadwork, it is essential to improve your overall fitness (people often overlook legs, which is plain stupid) to be a good boxer.

nothing beats sparring.

also, you must realize that you're going to get hit. just make the other person like it less.

How do you get involved with sparring? I wanted to try boxing in a few months but i dont know how it works, do you just fight someone like once a week or do you train for it or what?

Find a club...
Yo go there, you train, and you spar.
Sick of these people who think they can just jump into the ring and be a boxer. You go through a hell of a lot of hard work to even be able to make it a simple 4 rounds...

Ok, i was just under the impression sparring was just for training, not the intention of winning, so i thought it was quite relaxed.

It is, but you can't expect yourself to train well in the ring without a foundation to it first. Sparring is still extremely physically demanding, even though it's 'laxed in comparison to an actual league match.

Actually, before you spar you need to learn how to punch properly. Because you don't. Also, you need to learn how to move properly. Again, you don't know how to move (it's not just walking around). You need to learn the basic technics. You need to learn how to use your body before you spar.

First, you need to learn how it feels to get hit in the face.

To do this, beat your face. Repeatedly.

Boxing is the hardest physical activity I've ever come across so far in my life. But also the most rewarding in my opinion.

There are boxing gyms everywhere, no matter where you live. go to www.boxinggyms.com and find a gym in your state. They're usually cheap ($35/month at mine) and you'll get in really good shape.

Also, I've injured my knuckle from punching wrong and not wearing gloves when hitting the bags. This was when I started. You're going to need a trainer to show you how to wrap your hands properly, punch properly, and yell at you to work harder. Then, once you get to spar, you'll realize how hard boxing really is and, if you liked it, you'll begin to work as hard as possible on your own. I'm relatively new to the sport, but when you start, 3 rounds will probably wind you. It's a great thing to do though. I never want to stop.

PS, I actually punched myself in the stomach in different places to see where it hurts the most. SOLAR PLEXUS FTL!!!

Haha so true. My last fight, i was just behind on points, got to the last round dug deep and had the other guy on the ropes. Adrenalin's pumping, he's trying to get out and then, smack, right in the solar plexus... You know right away that whole steamtrain of punches comes to an end and you stand there wheezing trying to get your breath back while he's trying to get his.
Needless to say i ended up losing on point haha...

I actually haven't got hit in the solar plexus in a spar yet (havent done any matches) but damn if I wasn't getting dizzy when my last partner went to town on my face. It'd be pretty fucking embarassing to get ko'd at the gym in a spar, haha!

even if a little weak guy hits you there it hurts.

Question; greater chest muscles = less exposed/painful solar plexus hits?

boxing doesnt work on the street. its an incomplete fighting style. you should stop doing it or you are gonna develop bad habits and get killed on the street, when you get eye gouged and curb stomped by like 3-4 guys.
