So, diet. Even though I took a single-semester health class, I'm still kinda confused as to what constitutes a healthy diet - not a CUT OUT THIS KIND OF FOOD AND LOSE 10 POUNDS OF WATER WEIGHT diet- a balanced one.

Is the food pyramid really a good guide? Cause that would mean basing most meals on some kind of whole grain, then a smaller portion of vegetables/fruit/dairy product, an even smaller portion of meat, and then a tiny bit of fat thrown in.

But I see people bitching about carbs all the time. Can't you just use carbs to jump-start your metabolism and smaller amounts of protein to sustain it?

Food pyramid isn't terrible. Carbs are fine. The days of the trendy ketoacidosis diet are finally drawing to a close.

The food pyramid is probably one of the only correct guides to healthy eating, but a lot of the food we eat isn't portioned into the way they try to tell you to eat. Its really all about what you feel comfortable with though. Obviously eating a lot of fruit and vegetables is good, and eating a decent amount of grain is good too. Minimize eating red meats and dairy in excess, and avoid fats whenever possible.

Its pretty simple, you don't have to go all out on a diet plan to eat healthy, just make smart choices. I think we should make a /fit/ guide to eating healthy at fast food restaurants. Its possible, just hard.

Mostly right. Also depends on what you're gunning for in terms of "health" and "fitness". You'll probably want more protein in your diet than the pyramid implies regardless.

Carbs are a tricky subject- when most people talk about cutting carbs, they mean forms of grains and pasta and breads.
But fruit has carbs. So do nuts and dairy.
A lot of it is based on moderation and you workout regiment.
Carbs aren't evil. Oatmeal and whole wheat is great fiber. White breads do nothing for the body.
It really depends on what you're trying for, I guess.

My version of health isn't a terribly informed or well-defined one - I just want to stay at an average weight, live long, and be able to function at an "average" level of fitness.

I don't really care so much how my body looks, so long as I don't have a heart attack at 45 like some family members did.
