>>71834 It's a gym. In general, it's really a place where everyone goes for a common purpose. So there lies a social contract if you will. People are pretty chill there, in my opinion. You can ask people how to use certain machines if you're not familiar with them. As for etiquette, I ask if people are actually using a machine, rather than just sitting at it and resting. Since you're going with a friend, I'm sure you don't need to ask anyone else to help spot you.
As for anything else, it all depends on what's available at the gym and the clientelle. Some people gravitate towards the machines more than the free weights. I personally like doing stuff people aren't so I get to have a little more freedom and get to pace myself better. I really don't like having to wait for people that do a set, then wait a minute at the machine, then continue. I usually do a set, then go do a set for another exercise, and by the time I'm done with that I come back to the first one.
