furthermore, there's two metabolic factors at play here:
firstly, resistance training has a MASSIVE "afterburner" effect- your body will not only expend calories while lifting the weights, but for a certain time period after. in other words, lift in morning, burn more throughout the whole day. so yes, it's very possible to get into caloric deficit this way while your body is repairing/growing its muscle tissue because you've fed it an adequate supply of carbs, proteins and fats to keep your glycogen levels where you want them to do so.
secondly, by gaining muscle mass your basal metabolic rate increases, so you end up burning more calories.
yes newbies, it's completely possible to even lose significant amounts of fat with very little or even no cardio- it just takes a hell of a lot longer
