Hey /fit/,

Over the last few of days my resting pulse rate has been ~120bpm. I'm 18 years old, 135lbs, 5'9", and a smoker. Is that too high?

YES
>> Anonymous
you probably just can't count.
>> Anonymous
Way too high. People that are fit have around 70 IIRC. Cut down on your smoking, do some aerobic activity like swimming laps.
>> Anonymous
Way too high. If cardio doesn't lower it, see a doctor.

Okay, apparently I have been doing it wrong or not relaxed enough while testing myself. I had my friend check it after I laid down for about 3 minutes and she got 81bpm.
Is it possible that it could rise to ~120bpm doing normal day to day activities, though?

81 is much better, but your still not in that 'good' zone. If your day-to-day activities include running, jogging, lifting, or something around it.

My day to day activities consist of going to class, going to work (IT job, not much movement), or going out. Almost no physical activity..

High stress?
When your stressed, the hormones cause your heart rate to increase, as well as blood sugar and the like.

Yeah, high stress could be it. I'm pretty much in class, doing homework, studying, or at work almost all day for 6 days a week. Could caffeine cause it to increase that much? I am pretty much a caffeine fiend. I probably drink near 8 cans of a caffeinated sodas a day.

A friend actually noticed I was stressed out and suggested I should meditate once a day. Is that a bunch of bullshit or should I give it a shot?
>> Anonymous
Cut down on caffeine, smoking, and yes, meditating correctly causes calmness to take hold of your body.

Make sure you use the your time effectively. Do homework during lulls in school/work.

Meditation is a good way to controll your breathing. It can be anything from sitting down for half an hour with no outside stimulation, to just closing your eyes, and forcing yourself to relax. Breath deeply. Just let all the stress go.

I'll put it this way. Healthy people have lower heart rates. I'm 5'8", 170lb fatty. My resting HR is 55.

enjoy your heart problems

Last time I got it checked was standing up next to a counter by blood pressure machine, it was 96BPM.

2 months previous my pulse was checked sitting down by a doctor, she said it was 55BPM.

I do not work out particularly often, I am 5'8" 115 lbs. Wtf /fit/?

Go see a doc and get an ekg. you're in sustained v. tach and you need to find out why and get it treated.

sure, could be stress. could also be atrial fibrillation that will kill you. find out.

standing vs sitting

also probably were waiting for the doctor for like 30 minutes sitting in waiting room, hence lower hr
