OK OP, first of all, I would advise that you do NOT get fitness advice here on /fit/.
Mostly its a bunch of trolls from /b/ and tub 'o' lards that pretend to be body builders.
Secondly, the first, most important step to getting in shape is creating a short term goal (3 months is best). If you can pick something doable--say lose 12 lbs--and stick with it, you will have the gumption to do almost anything else past that.
The hardest part is the first few days. I would suggest doing whatever sort of cardio floats your boat about 3-4 times a week. Also, you need to push yourself. This doesnt mean you have to become 'rocky' overnight, but you do have to do some work. If you feel burn and you end up tired and wiped, you're good.
Secondly, do some calisthenics. /fit/ HATES calisthenics, but /fit is also very very inexperienced. Try some body weight movements like squatting and standing and pushups/situps. This will help to burn some calories and get you used to working harder (not to mention add some muscle mass!).
The absolutely most important step is the diet. Don't go for a ditch diet, simply eat healthier, and in most cases, less. Don't reach for the cookies at night, and don't reach for the chips if you're idle. ALWAYS, and i mean ALWAYS have a bottle of water with you. It will amaze you as to how much your cravings will die when you take a few swigs.
Anyway, see you in a month when you come back to tell me that you have some small stretch marks and you've lost a quarter of an inch! :D
