Hey /fit/,

There's nothing I'd like to do more than start going to a gym, but I'm afraid of being judged by those around me. I'm 6'3, 250 lbs, my body is shaped sort of like a pear. How can I get over my fear that people will see me there and think "Look at that fatass, why does he even bother? People like him will never get in shape," etc., etc.?

Go in like a fucking whirlwind. srsly. I see really fat dudes come in and think shit, those guys are really fucking trying good for them. Don't sit around staring into space or playing with an iPod. Nobody's gonna look down on you for trying to better yourself, and even if they do, who gives a fuck? We're all dead in a few years anyway.
>> Anonymous
You deserve some respect just for the fact that you're trying to change yourself. I'm sure most people at a gym will feel like that too.

Also cocks.

Ya man just go in there with a set routine and knock it out. The overweight guys that try to act hard by wearing retarded looking gym clothes or gloves for no reason are annoying, along with the ones as mentioned that just mess with their iPod or dabble on one machine for a few reps then move and really accomplish nothing.

I've lost near 40 pounds since February and going in their then was kind of scary, but i just kept to myself and got my workout done and I'm now in great shape. Not to mention im 6'2" was 240 pounds so I can promise you, you won't be the largest man in their by far, I know I wasn't when I started.

people at the gym are too self obsessed to care about fat people. go to the gym; it gives everyone else motivation. fat people are a burden on society.. or at least gross, you need to fix yourself up.
>> Anonymous
No man, everyone in there knows what you are going through, regardless of what brought them to the gym; you're there for the same reason they came there: to better yourself. I see guys like you come in all the time, and I have to say, I'm pretty fucking impressed with the guys who stick with it because it takes guts and a lot of us relate to and remember that initial fear. Ultimately, we are a bunch of adults all doing our own thing, and when you stick with it, all you get is respect and a sense of fellowship from these same people you were worried about before. You know what you say to someone who judges you OP? "Fuck you" and you do your thing.
>> Anonymous
Gyms are usually full of nice people, cunts don't really like routine, commitment or hard work.
>> Anonymous
i am going to be honest i am one of these people who laff at fat people.
but when you make marked decrease respect is gained from everyone it is really only a good thing.

You laugh because you are probably more insecure than the OP.

You'd be surprised how friendly people are at a gym...

My training partner for a long time was an Olympic powerlifter. With his shirt on dude looked pretty out of shape, however he was in a lot better shape than all those Captain Upperbody douchebags packed into our gym anyway.

Don't stress it, people are there to get in and get the fuck out, nobody cares what you look like man. Get over that shit so you can focus on your routine and get your shit handled.
>> Anonymous
No one pays attention to other people at the gym.

man, just go.

I just started going to the gym just over a week ago now. At first i thought the same. but the people are great. Whilst your on the machines or doing your stuff no one is watching you as they are too busy doing whatever they are doing.

>>Whilst your on the machines

If we are talking about lifting, stop using machines for them.

Some people look at you, usually mostly to see what you're doing

No one gives a fuck what you are doing unless you start screaming like you're being raped or something.

1. go to bench press
2. ask a regular to spot you
3. make friends
4. ???
5. profit

seriously, it's not to hard to find someone to help you out, and often they show up there at the same time every day and they may even take you under their wing, I for one hate seeing fat people that don't do anything about it, personally I've always wanted to help someone loose weight, it would make me feel so good

I do. I look at all the arm curlers and people with disproportional bodies and facepalm (not literally of course).

it's all in your head - every person in there is worried about others watching and judging them, so much so that they don't watch and judge others. everyone who starts off - whether they are too fat or too skinny - goes through this. once you get comfortable you will never worry about it again. whenever I see a beginner I feel good for him because I started off very small too.
>> Anonymous
Don't worry OP even them skinny fags are like that when they go

OP, no one will think that about you, since you are there to improve yourself. I love seeing heavy people make progress over the months. Most people are there to work out, feel good about yourself.
>> Anonymous
Everyone is there for the same reason you are. They aren't going to judge you for trying to get in shape. Plus, most people at the gym a nice and will be willing to help you out and give you advice.
>> Anonymous
What everyone else says.
People are their to improve. Either they won't care about you or they will be happy that there is someone else there that also wants to better themselves. I like to see people at the gym that are also working hard and making progress.
good times.

i get into phases where i go to the gym a hell of a lot and the only thing i look at is the hot girls or laugh/stare at the mainly grown men staring at themselves in the mirrors fixed around the gym as they flex their egos. no 1 really cares if your fat they/i usually am happy they are putting forth the effort into not being that stereotype of the fat american pig.

I work at a gym and we constantly mock the fatties who come in. One time a girl overheard us and left crying but nothing ever happened to any of us. She must have been too much of a loser fatty to even complain to the manager. I laughed at your lard ass already reading your post, so you might as well head on down so we can all laugh in person.
>> Anonymous
I NEVER laugh at fat people who are actually in the gym and working out / doing cardio. I DO laugh at fat people at buffets cramming shit food into their gobs at an amazing rate and then complaining that they're fat.

I've watched this one woman, probably in her early 40's, she came in like any other noob. Reading the machine descriptions, a little lost, old clothes from the 70's. She was pretty out of shape, and just today I saw her again and she must have lost 50 pounds. Talking with people, smiling, confident, went and got some nice workout clothes and an MP3 player, she is looking good.

Re: Ringworm, just don't sit your bare ass down on the sauna benches like a retard. ANY populated gym will give you nasty shit if you treat it like your own personal home: stay out of the nasty ass whirlpool, sit on your fucking towel in the sauna. Wash your hands.

I believe this anon, there are hardly any more irritating douches in the world than the douches who "work" at gyms.

Protip: never, ever, EVER pay for an in-house bullshit trainer. Do your own research and read, you don't need a fucking trainer. If you really think you absolutely have to have some retard standing over you looking the other way while you do crunches, saying "one... keep goin... good, two..." then you're not really there to improve, you're there for emotional reinforcement and you'll do better somewhere else.

I'm a trainer and I work with a bunch of assholes that only prescribe 30 minutes on the bike, crunches, arm curls, and leg extensions. Later some of them make fun of their clients, some don't. I have a feeling that most of those guys who teach like that don't know how to train themselves, so they show the easy movements. Anyway, I on the other hand try to give the clients their money's worth, I teach squats, deadlifts, and all the other complex movements that most will screw up on their own. I figure my clients can do the cardio and other crap on their own. Just came into say that not all trainers are like that.

Kudos then, you're one of the few. Do you work freelance or do you work for a chain? There's an LA Fitness here in Atlanta that's just horrible.

(Yes I have to use LA Fitness. It's like a mile from me and there just aren't any hardcore gyms around, screw you guys. I'm really not gay.)

Yea, but what's worrisome is that there's probably more docs out there that are like that one guy.
