Hey /fit/,
5'9", 152 lbs., 300 lbs. deadlift, 350 lbs. squat, 175 lbs. bench, 6:15 mile, 13% bodyfat. I want to start doing something besides just lifting and running, and parkour and rock climbing have both caught my eye.

The way I see it, both develop a method of overcoming obstacles. What's /fit/'s opinion on these two, pro and cons of both, and which does /fit/ think is better?

Put it this way... you will commit suicide at the age of 130, because of parkour. free running, just learning it hurts like a bitch. go indoor rock climbing and get sick at it, go rock climbing outdoors. less chance of dead.

I think your a faggot if you can squat more then you deadlift.

You gotta admit though, if those stats are real he's doing really damn good.

OP here, wat?

>>475738
I was squatting for a year (up to 250 lbs. then at a bodyweight of around 125 lbs.) before I started deadlifting, or doing anything else for that matter. But now that I think about it... it is very gay. I need to work on that.

OP. They are real, although I'm not posting a picture of myself or my powerclean to spare the embarrassment. At 13% bodyfat, I'm still not a pretty sight, especially since training for strength and not size hasn't (while it's made me look better) made me look impressive yet.

I would say parkour. Rock climbing tends to be limited by vertical motion, while parkour is all about boundlessness. Sure, rock climbing has some technical stuff like holding onto pretty much molecular bits of stone, but that's really the only unique thing about it. It's basically "don't fall off, move upwards somehow". Parkour is "move anywhere, anyhow", and therefore a lot more challenging and a lot more advantageous
>> Anonymous
In Parkour, the only really challenging obstacles are things like walls. Anything else you can just sort of jump around. Walls? Try climbing boulders. Ergo, rock climbing is superior

Only the French would a make a sport out of running away.

Or running towards something, technically

Why not do both?

I just started parkour with some guys at my college; shit is FUCKING AWESOME.

I know exactly the way you feel; you want to use your body/muscle effectively. You sound like you're in great shape to do parkour, find some guys to do it with.

The only thing you'll need to watch out for is fucking your joints up. If you land right, you aren't going to have any problems; but, as a n00b, you'll be kinda sore in the hips/knees/ankles at first.

tl;dr DO IT

Parkour might have some cool little tricks, but it's mainly just acrobatics. Rock climbing has the serious strength and balance.

Oh hey man, I fixed this for you
>> Anonymous
Both have their merits, but rock climbing just seems so unbearably limited
>> Anonymous
rock climbing is much much safer. if you boulder, you can't really fuck anything up, and if you climb higher than 10 feet, get 2 harnesses, dynamic rope and some carabiners. due to the need for quality equipment, you will need to spend more money on it than on parkour.

parkour is also not neccecarilly dangerous if you keep it to the smaller stuff and work your way up, but the acrobatics do have the potential for accidents. find people who know what they are doing.
>> Anonymous
>>476385
Fitness/function-wise, which would you suggest out of bouldering or parkour?
>> Anonymous
>>476393
Seriously, why not do both? It's not as if you're choosing swimming or running. The skills you learn either of them tend to apply to the other (with some exceptions). Do some parkour one day, then boulder another, go on a bouldering excursion during the holiday, and go to town on some rails and staircases when you come back. If you see a boulder, climb it. If you see an interesting piece of urban architecture, surmount it. It's just that simple.
>> Anonymous
>>476393
parkour is going to be more aerobic as you're constantly moving and using your own momentum to clear obstacles.
rock climbing is going to involve more holds and maintaining form while you progress up/across the wall.
both can be limited by where you can go (where you can parkour without getting hassled and where you can climb without having to drive a good hour or two). and generally you wont be doing much of either during the winter unless its indoor or covered.
My advice would go out and try both. For climbing try both indoor and outdoor as they have different feels.
>> Anonymous
>>475731

climbing gives stronger fingers, excellent for fapping!

not seriously now, climbing is really great. Boulder for learn technique and length climbing to improve your endurance.

You'll feel awesome if you can finally climb a route you've been trying on for like 2 weeks, you don't have that with parkour ...

and equipment for lengthclimbing can usually be rented...

btw, both sports wont really help you to lift bigger weights, but you will get more reps :)
>> Anonymous
outdoor rock climbing is the best thing in the world. the mental challenge and adrenaline rush combined with the physical exercise you get is amazing.
>> Anonymous
Watch some of those parkour videos critically, instead of reacting with "Wow, look what they can do!" Nearly everything they do is just hyped up and silly, and the actually stuff which involves substantial functional fitness is really stuff which experienced climbers do all the time. Some stuff does require practice, but a climber would have the requisite level of fitness to master it after a few tries. All in all, I say boulder, but that's not to say climbing is without merit.

>>476537

Agreed.

I just have some friends introduce me to rock climbing. I'm hooked. We're going to go out in the desert soon (So Cal).

Shit's cash, brah :)

parkour is too dangerous imo.

you want a challenge take up quantum mechanics while maintaning your workouts, unless you can rock climb with naked women...then the latter, obviously.
