lots of cardio while taking in a lot of protein without very much lifting - what happens?
The protein will be broken down and stored as fat. You will then burn this fat in subsequent cardio sessions.

If all you do is cardio, you still want to take in a fair amount of protein so your existing muscles get their nutrients.
