I was going at it for 30-45 minutes just throwing combinations like 2-3 3-4 then some kicks to change it up. For some reason i started counting towards the end of the workout and threw more than 1,000 punches. the last 50 punches i was throwing i would go nonstop and real quick so hopefully im on the right track

It's probably the way I'm hitting, but I feel almost no cardio going on when I hit the bag (usually 20 mins at a time).

Then you're not attacking it fast enough. Work on your speed if you've got the power down.

I second the HIIT-style speed punching. Do a lead jab and rear cross as fast and hard as you can for 30 seconds, break for 30 seconds, and then repeat in that order as many times as you can. Pay attention to foot work and it'll fuck you up. Feel free to replace those two punches with any other left-right combo.

Another thing you can do is do a quick combo, and then duck between every combo. This'll give your legs some workout too, but you have to duck as fast as you can.

Also remember to use your knees and not your back when ducking.
