Hey /fit/, are push-ups and squats good for anything? I've been doing 1000 of each day for about 2 weeks, and noticed some slight abs and shoulder muscle increase, along with thighs, but nothing to write home about.
Any point in keeping it up as an quick-to-do at-home exercise, or is it pointless without adding some workout on the machines in the gym to it?

If you're looking for a lot of muscle gain you obviously need to do weight lifting. I'd recommend keeping up the pushups though (perhaps 1000 is a little overboard), as for squats you can add them into your weight lifting by simply squatting with a weight. Or, do leg extensions.

1000 though? Good job.

Yeah, I realize that going to a gym would probably be ideal, but I'm in the first year of university, and I live sort of away from the city, so going to a gym is hardly an option. Not really looking for some bodybuilder-esque muscle gain, just something to keep in shape. Doing the pushups/squats because it's the only thing I can do that requires no machines, plus I can do it in between studying. Was just wondering if there's some other exercise that requires no tools, was thinking of burpees or whatever they are called, but it's pretty much what I'm doing already, with some jumping added in.

If by inshape you mean toned try pushups on different level surfaces (such as on a bench), pullups (if you have a bar that can support your weight...shouldn't be hard to find one outside if you don't), situps (all you need to do is get your shoulders off the ground, many people think you need to come all the way up to your knees but you don't), and of course you could simply lie on your back and hold your shoulders + legs in the air, great way to work your abs. And of course there's more exercises like lunges that you can do, or buying a stress ball and squeezing it all the time (great way to work your forearm). If you go to a sports store they sell 1lb-5lb squeezing balls, I'd recommend getting one because it's fun to squeeze them when there's nothing else to do.

What kind of university doesn't have a gym?

try getting a weighted vest. one where you can adjust the weight. try to get up to 100lbs in the vest, then do your push-ups, pull-ups, and squats. it's what i do and i'm in pretty good shape.

Can't see myself doing a pushup with like 50 kilos on my back.

you need to increase your resistence. you can still do body weight exercises but find ways to make them challenging without going into endless reps

for instance, do circuits like
30 seconds - squat as fast as you can
30 seconds - pushup as fast as you can
30 seconds - tricep pushups as fast as you can
30 - seconds - bicycle crunches as fast as you can

rest and the repeat 10-15 times. that will give you a 20-30 minute very intesne workout.

or use things lying around the house to increase resistence. for instance, use cinder blocks to increase range of motion for dips and push ups. do pistol squats, do lunged with one leg raised at about hip level.

or go to rosstraining.com and buy the book called "never gymless" its phenomenal.

It's not bullshit, 500 when I come home, 500 before I hit the bed.
