soup and water isn't a lot, its actually pretty bad since you're gonna slow your metabolism a lot. do some walking as long as its not going to cause knee problems. eat stuff like rice, tuna, chicken, whole wheat bread, 1% milk, fruits, vegtables, natural peanut butter isn't too bad either. try for 5-6 smaller meals a day to keep your metabolism burning calories. avoid sweets/soda etc. lots of water is good, do at least a gallon, and if you're really 300lbs you could probably even do as much as a gallon and a half a day without any problem.
on the plus side, if you really put your mind to it, you could lose weight surprisingly quickly to a certain point. at ~300 lbs you could be dropping 5-10 lbs for a while.
just don't get discouraged, the most important thing i could tell you is that you have to want to do it for yourself. i lost next to nothing when my friend was dragging me to the gym with him, but when i decided to do it for myself i ended up dropping 60lbs in 3 months and gained a lot of muscle/strength
