Hey /fit/. I want to learn a martial art but I live in a crappy area where the only things I can learn are:

Taekwondo
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Aerobic Kickboxing
Judo
Japanese Jujitsu
Ving Tsun(Wing Chun)
Toyama-Ryu Iai-do
Matsukaze-Ryu
Tai Chi
Cuong Nhu
(That's all that is available where I live)
I'm really fat, but I'm able to run far and exercise and I have a strong will so I won't give up. Out of all of these, which would you suggest I pick?

Judo is great in my opinion, you don't learn how to punch or kick people, but in only very few martial arts you learn how to fall correctly. And that is the advantage of Judo, i guarantee you, if you smash your opponent on the concrete he'll be done if he doesn't know how to fall corectly (because, if you smash him, he lies on the ground and you stand above him, the rest is up to your imagination...)

The last five are your only real options. The others are out-dated, or non confirmed to be reliable.

If you're really fat, but claim to have the stamina you have you obviously- LIAR, YOU BIG FAT LIAR, CONFESS, LIAR!- need to take a grappling class so that way you won't seem so handicapped. Judo or the jits are both great ideas but they will allow you to develop the habit of throwing your weight around if you're that big. I suggest you take the Kickboxing class because one, your striking skills are still important no matter how good your grappling is, and two, it'll increase your cardio and stamina while helping you become more flexible and less unhealthy. It'll be hell, but if you got that strong will then surely- LIAR, CONFESS, LIAR- you will come out of it a better man.

If you're doing it for self defense more than fitness, think about taking more than one MA.

i assume you mean the first fice. except taekwondo, and if you take away the "aerobic" part from kickboxing.

My bad. First five.

Take Judo or BJJ, preferably Judo, and learn how to punch from someone who's taken a striking art. Like Aikido, Judo can be incredibly worthless in countering strikes if you don't already know.

If you want to get very fit, Aerobic Kickboxing. If you want to have a somewhat laid back approach but still get decent exercise, TKD. If you want to kick some ass, BJJ or Judo. If you want to dedicate your life to meditation and learning how to heal or kill a man, Tai Chi.

you need to tell me your goals

1. spiritual/artistic
2. fitness/health
3. self-defense
4. competition

the answer is different depending on which you want to pursue

for flexibility you wanna do wushu or longfist or tai chi because chinese martial arts emphasize flexibility more than japanese (dunno bout korean)

for muscles, some karates, judo, bjj, and tai chi (tai chi reeeeally works your quads because you stay partially squatting through a 30 minute form--try standing with knees partially bent for 30 minutes then get back to me)

for fighting for money, a mix of bjj, judo, muay thai, and wing chun because no one martial art is sufficient for mma or street fights (bjj gives you a good ground game, but shit for close combat standing; wing chun gives you fucking badass close combat standing techniques but shit for ground fighting)

my background is in shotokan and tai chi
