Hey /fit/, about how far should a 20 year old, 6'1'' 200 pound male be able to run? I need a goal, I'm starting a running program for the summer.

1 mile, 6 minutes

A six minute mile? I could barely pull off 13 in high school.

What are you capable of then?

That's called walking.

Dude...just jog a mile, time it, and try to improve until you can't improve any more. Your height, age, and weight have virtually no bearing on your ability to run fast.

22yr, 5'10" 165lb lifeguard here, i've been a runner for a long time and 6-min mile is my race-pace. Then again i have a friend that's 30lbs lighter than me and 2 inches taller and he ran a 4:07 the other day, but he's just disgusting (seems like he sprints when he takes off and just never slows down).

8 minutes for a mile is the running requirement for being a lifeguard, i'd make that your goal this summer. If you can break that earlier than expected? Drop it down to 7 minutes, then 6:30. Beat my 6 min by the end of summer, and my hat's off to you. Oh, and no cheating with running the whole thing downhill ;)

p.s. a 13-minute-mile isn't running a mile. It's walking.

I'm a fat loser. any ideas for how to get rid of side stitches and a constricting feeling in your lungs?

For a runner, thats a terrible time.

I just pictured a fatass huffing and puffing his way down a track with his arms flung high above his head, his face red with exertion.

Haha the imagery made me chuckle

Yeah right.
2h4m6s = 42km (world record)
6m = 2.2 (you)
114m = 42km
1h54m = 42km

58min33sec = 21km (you)
57m = 21km (semi-marathon world record)

I had that constricting feeling in my lungs when I started running too. I am not fat, just in bad shape and a smoker. The thing to do is keep running. you are just starting out, you are not expected to run fast. Take it slow and work your lungs into shape. They are not used to expanding this much and that is what is causing your pain.

I run 3 times a week, 3 miles, done it for 4 months now. The pain was gone after 2 weeks. Just endure it and realize that this is good for you.

Goddamn, you non-Americans sure are dumb. I don't see anywhere in that guy's post where he used the metric system or talked about distances over 1 mile. A 6 minute mile? Pssh, that's nothing special. But indeed, if he claimed to hold that pace for the length of a marathon, that would raise my eyebrow.

There's no point in bragging about how fast he is for 10 seconds. And if he can't run for an hour at the speed he is bragging about then he's full of shit.

If you think running like that for an hour is great, then you probably think that this guy is the sexx0r beast

I think you are pretty confident in your ability to read minds. The guy lies. I don't care about Ethiopian marathoners and He-Men.

how far?
if speed doesn't matter you should be able to run quite long
10km or something in a little over an hour is easy if you don't get bored

I'm reading what he wrote. There's no reason to assume he's lying about being average.

world record mile : 3:43.13
21k at that pace is ~48m32s

notice how they're talking about single miles, not long distances. 6 minutes is average for one mile.

Coincidentally the only people who run for a fucking hour regularly are Ethiopian marathoners and He-Men
