Ok, my school has a pretty small weightroom. Since it is small, we have to move quickly. During conditioning for Baseball, we rotate machines doing each machine 1 time and 10-12 reps at each machine. This has been my only exposure to weight training.

I was thinking about when I graduate and go off to college, that I would start going to the gym and lifting. But I've never been to a gym outside of school, and was wondering what is the normal routine inside a weight room. Do people do multiple sets on each machine? How many sets? How many reps? How often? How long are you in there? Would there be someone there to help you get started? Are there employees spotting for you or do you just ask another person?

By how often, I mean how many times a week.

Well, maybe you could tell me what happens in YOUR gym

First step: Stay the fuck off of machines. If you don't have a vagina you have no use for a machine. Lift some fucking iron like a real penis possessing citizen.

Thats what I meant, machine/station. We go around each station doing 1 set and then rotating. One station will be bench press, another squat, lat pull, dips, leg curl, etc.

Everyone got their own personalized routine, but most people have 8 exercises of 3 sets of 12 reps. Full-body workouts. Usually only 1-2 exercises for lower body. Most of exercises are done either lying, on machines or using cable machines. They are usually ignorant of the time limits, know nothing about proper nutrition. Talk inbetween sets.

I personally wasted my first 6 months trying stuff from bodybuilding.com, but then i realized that i lacked basic strenght because of my 15lb bicep curls. I then searched the matter 3 months ago and found Rippetoe and Stronglift's

If by lat pulls you mean the machine, dead it. Do pull ups instead. Just about any machine that you are using is useless. It sounds like you have a sound full body regiment. You're gonna want to do at least 3 sets of 8 for the majority of the exercises.

Lmao. I second this with the exception of a few useful machines.

Thirded. Machines suck. they do too much of the work for you. Years ago before these machines were invented, and before workouts were "domesticated", people were actually strong. Get the hell away from them and go find a row of different dumbbell sizes and a power rack loaded with plates so you can do squats.

Real power comes from this. not that shit. Tell me how strong you are practically with that shit, we'll all trounce you

Like what? The only machines that come close to being useful are leg machines. Do some pistols, luges, box jumps, etc. and you're legs will be perfectly stimulated.

OP here, we only have machines for legs. Like the leg curl and leg lift. I go to public school, so we can't get the huge gyms like the private schools.

Lunges, squats, and box jumps don't require machines and will make your legs strong. The do pistols to make all the bitches jealous.

What's with the machine hate? Seriously, I'm a noob.

The iron is superior. If you know that than you're one step closer to not being a noob.

Ok, you're hoarding some secret here. Out with it.

At gyms like 24 hour....

Yes. People do multiple sets on the gyms. I've seen lots of people doing sets of 4 or more.

In terms of how many reps, its a huge range. I see a lot of 10-15 though (me included at 12).

Sets, again varies hugely. I do sets of 4.

I'm not usually on a machine longer than 10min and that is on a harder exercise. I've seen people on one for 20 min which usually pisses me off because I'm waiting.

Unless you get a personal trainer, you are on your own. If your doing something really wrong, like dangerous wrong, someone will probably say something though.

If you need a spot, like just quickly, you can usually ask someone nearby who is resting. I've done it for other people and asked other people. They probably won't spot you for lots of sets though unless you are doing off-sets with them.
