What muscles did I work? Anonymous
So last night, I bought some sparring gloves and ended up punching around for an hour or two. I don't usually do that kinda thing, so, I woke up with some sore muscles. Mostly shoulders, upper back, and for some reason a muscle that's like under my armpit.

Well, tell me this, fit. Ideally, in a punch, what muscles would I be working?
>> Rage !CXVxtSPywA
Actually, I'm interested in knowing if this is a good way to cardio. I'm wondering if i should hit the bag for a bit after i do my HIIT.

Any idea?

I was sweating pretty good after doing it for not too long, but then again, this was the first time I ever did that.

>muscle that's like under my armpit

Serratus anterior. l2anatomy.

Need lots of core. Abs, lower back, etc etc.

>>449291
If you want. If you do it intense enough, you will increase heart rate. Increased HR=cardio

thanks

>Well, tell me this, fit. Ideally, in a punch, what muscles would I be working?

The leg and core muscles. The arms and hands are just the delivery system for the punch.

i gotta imagine the biceps are doing something, man.

Why would be the bicep used in an extending motion of the arm?

Keeping the forearm from twisting when you hit? Keeping itself from getting injured?
>> Anonymous
>>449351

So you're telling me that practice with punching would, in theory, increase the muscles in your core area?

Thats kinda awesome...
>> Anonymous
>>449361
The adaptation curve would be very small. Very insignificant gains. You have to work your core outside of punching in order to be punch with more power.
>> Anonymous
>>449360
Remember to not rotate your punch to final striking position until the last second. Adds a ton of power compared to one that starts out knuckles forward, palm down. Also, kinetic linking.

Those that work in SQUATZ and DEADLIFTZORS
>> Anonymous
>>449414
No. They're not really used for much of anything.
>> Anonymous
>>449421

ah k i was told they were :/
>> Anonymous
>>449422
No, all they're good for is stuff that involves extending your arm.

Traps. The muscle under your armpit. >_>

And your core and legs too, don't forget.
So SQUATZ

You faggots better know how to wrap your damn hands.

Seconding this anon. Don't fuck around with boxing with:
No proper technique taught
Hands not properly wrapped

Both will land you in a world of pain. You can familiarize yourself with the techniques before starting, there are quite a few good videos on youtube.

Punching bags kick ass for cardio, I miss having a bag in the basement ever since I moved.

I third this.

Ideally, one doesn't need to use wraps or gloves for punching bags, sparring etc.

Skin only rips when skin is soft. Calluses are the way to go.
>> Anonymous
Whole body. Learn how to punch.

spoken like a true karate kid fan boy...

the wrap and gloves are to protect long term damage, not to prevent damage to the skin.

now go punch the tree in your back yard and brag to your friends about how tough you are. maybe you can get a blow job out of it.

OP: join a boxing club and learn everything the proper way other wise say good bye to making a fist if you keep up this backyard boxing bull shit

so u mean i cant learn boxing from wii fit aw man this is some boolshit!

Wraps are not meant to protect the skin. They provide support for the wrist and hands, preventing injuries that can keep you from practicing for several days or weeks.

I'm not sure how many people here actually fight competitively, but its not just punching that will tire out unconditioned muscles. Your shoulders and back may be tired from hold your guard up for that hour or two. Its not something you can really work out, rather it is something you just naturally get used to after awhile.
>> Anonymous
>>449784
i doubt most people here train to compete. a half hour to 45 minutes is the most they will ever do. but good for you for having proper knowledge versus all the other fags who are saying DONT WRAP CONDITION YOUR KNUCKLS !!!OLO1

I thought about buying a punching bag myself. Saw the prices. Shitsuckscocks. Simple sand filled linen bag for me...

I has punching bag. It is frozen. I hit it with my bare knuckles. It is good for raging.
Right now the space between my ring finger and pinky hurts nicely and my ribs shoot pain whenever I compress my core. Also like OP there's pain in my armpit.
But I am liking this feeling. Also there's loads of dust in my garage and Im inhaling dust as I'm wailing on the bag.
What things will my training give me?

You will ascend to godhood and have Mas Oyama sitting on your left side, Rocky on your right and Bruce Lee will be your son who gave his life for the sins of /fit/ties

Good triceps are necessary for quick extension. Biceps for quick retraction. If you dont have those muscles strong you wont be punching with any speed or precision. Now POWER on the other hand, comes from the core mucles. chest, shoulders, upper and lower back, abs, and legs. In other words, if you want to be a good boxer, be prepared to work out everything.

wrong wrong wrong wrong

please be informed about the way the body works. it's not as simple as "well this body pulls so therefore it is necessary for contraction"

you want to practice quick punches? punch faster. Doing curls will not make you pull your punches back any faster.

So I accidentally have been boxing without wraps for 2months now. Is this bad? My form should be fine since I've watched every tutorial possible and recorded my punching several times.

No injuries but I do get aches in my palms if I land some some full power hooks.

>>449962
its not about technique. it's the fact that your fingers, hands and wrists are very supple. its long term damage you should be worried about. start wrapping immedietley and buy proper gloves. There's a reason why the UFC now makes people wear gloves and it has nothing to do with "reducing the blood shed". it's the fact that one punch, even with proper technique, can seriously disable your hand for life.

itm ight seem cool to punch like a fucking bad ass with no protection but you can count on some wrist/finger damage sooner or later if you continue to do so.

so just wrap up.

god this sounds like a condom commercial

Well I have some everlast 16oz sparring gloves and I can strap them pretty tight but I guess I'll go buy some wrist wraps.
>> Anonymous
>>449971
yes, get wrist wraps. google on how to strap up properly. make sure you are using a good length, too short and you're gonna sacrifice support.
>> Anonymous
>>449975

Yeah sure, I'm not a retard with these things. Well maybe I am since I waited so long to buy those wraps but I usually know/learn before doing something.

I have skinny wrists (6,7'') but decent size hands. (6'4'' tall etc)

Is a 6feet wrap long enough?
>> Anonymous
>>449982
here

nevermind, my local supplement store (lol) only had some retard 6' hand wraps in their webstore. Did some research, going to buy 15ft ones from somewhere else.

Hayabusa sparring gloves are the shit.

Shame they're a bit too hard and they only come in 16oz.

A 14oz pair of those would be great fun.

(I weigh 160lbs before you ask)

the under the armpit muscle would be your lats. You worked it by pulling your arms back into your chest repeatedly, not from actually punching.

You'll generally work them more when you don't hit a bag, because you can't use the recoil to bring your hands back in. You have to stop and retract using muscle. It's also a good thing that these are sore, it means you're pulling back your hands like you should and you aren't overextending your punches and letting your joints stop the motion.

keep it up.

here you go girls - this is how thy wrap
>> Negro Sparkle Faggot
Fuck you guys are retarded. Boxing uses biceps triceps shoulder core and back. You use your legs to punch but not enough for a workout.

Using no wraps is good for training. You don't want to punch someone in the forehead and break your hands.
>> Anonymous
Fuck, it's like people here haven't heard of the word 'technique'

Muay thai fighters and boxers use different techniques. Boxers deliver a lot of power from their legs to the punch, but if muay thai fighters used the same technique they'd leave themselves wide open for kicks

So yeah, it depends on what kind of a technique you want to use
>> Anonymous
people...its wrong of you to say punching uses your triceps and biceps. yes, they are active but they are not the driving force in the motion.

people put too much emphasis on isolated muscles and now the whole chain of command. it's more complex then TRICEPS PUSH LOL!! BICEPS PULL!11!
