Dear /fit/,

Twice a week a have to travel to and from my karate club 15km (9,3mi) away. To save money I decided to cycle this distance and get some exercise doing it.

My time has improved greatly since I began and I'm now at 38min going and 36min coming back. My average heart rate is always 162+-2 and my highest heart rate is always 173+-2.

My question is what kind of endurance am I building here: how much aerobic and how much anaerobic?

It's no longer 5am.

I guess your building some aerobic endurance... cyclists who race tend to do training rides of 30+ miles though. Cycling is such a specific routine that you only get better at it by doing it all the time... regardless it's always good for you.

The only problem with doing real training rides is that, for me at least, I have to consume at least 100-200 calories per hour on the bike so that I won't bonk out.

You're building mainly aerobic, and your HR will eventually go down significantly.
