I know that muscle soreness the day after a workout is a good thing, but if I don't have any, does that mean I'm making NO progress at all? No matter how hard my workout is or what weight I'm lifting, I never feel really sore the next day. Does it mean I'm failing if I'm not sore and I'm not making any progress?? What's the difference?

since there is only one way to growth muscle then a lack of soreness would mean that no muscle growth is taking place, unless op is on some kind of drug that dulls pain.

Are you working out until it hurts? Does it hurt at all anytime after the workout? Hell, maybe you're a fast healer and heal in your sleep, though that's unlikly. Just making your workout harder, because something's wrong.

OP here. How the hell am I supposed to gain any muscle or be able to lift bigger weights if I am not gaining any muscle whatsoever from working my hardest? I'm currently working weights I can only do 6-8 reps on each set, so I can't step it up to a higher weight, but if I'm making no progress on what is my limit, how am I supposed to get anywhere?? :/

I work out until it hurts and lift to failure, so I'm usually sore/tired right after I workout, but I don't get any of the next-day soreness that's supposed to mean I actually got anywhere.

Get a spotter and take failure to the next level.

Option 1) Adjust your workout. You've probably been doing the same workout for 8 months and your body has tweaked your muscles to be able to do it flawlessly.

Option 2) If you're new to the workout and you're still not getting sore, you're not working out nearly as hard as you think. Unless you're a paragon of muscle endurance/repair, you WILL get sore from a new workout -- you probably won't even need to do it all that hard.

Mind you, if you've been at the workout for over a week, you probably won't get ZOMG I CAN'T MOVE sore. At most you'll feel a bit wobbly a little after the workout, but even that fades.

I always wonder about this too. Sometimes I doubt I'm making progress even when people tell me I look bigger.

I figure the best way to measure my progress is to by keeping track of how much I lift. If I can lift more than a month ago, I must have made some progress.

soreness is not an indicator of anything aside from the fact you're sore. you won't get sore after about 2 weeks of going to the gym regularly.

Soreness means your muscles are ripped up and repairing themselves and making themselves bigger and stronger. That's a good thing. But you need to feed them with protein, and a healthy amount of carbs and fat too, to get any real growth.

the body adjusts rather quickly to workout routines. vary them frequently, change some weights, change the frequency. i'd like some more numbers and example rates to talk about though.

DOMS is NOT a prerequisite for progress.

Low rep/high weight stuff (generally good for skinny bastards like me) produces very little soreness after you've settled into a routine.

But trust me, it works.

But don't forget the surest way to know you made progress is to be sore as fuck the next day.
