To jumpstart your metabolism, make sure you eat frequently. Try to eat every 3 hours or so, and get a lot of lean protein. And yes, cutting out the junk will help, but why not exercise while you're at it? Gain some muscle while you're at it.
To start, buy yourself an exercise ball and band. With the ball you can really work your abs/lower back and also do some wall squats for quads. With the band you can work your arms, shoulders, and to some extent your chest. If you're only looking for free stuff, just do pushups, lunges, and bicycle crunches. Don't forget to do warmups.
