Pullups: where do they fit into a normal 2 or 3 day routine?

They are as compound as it gets, they work a lot of muscles. Even my abs get tired after doing a lot of pullups.

How can these possibly fit into a routine where different muscle groups are targeted for different days, when pullups target so many groups at once.

On your back day. Or get a $15 pullup bar and put it in your room and you can do them all the time.

I do pullups almost every time I work out. If I want to go crazy, 100 pull ups spread over an hour or so at home. If I want to go hard, 4-6 sets of 8-10 reps. If I just want to add them on to a work out, 3-5 sets of 6-10 reps, depending how I feel.

No. Most grip widths are good. They just hit different parts. You should alternate wide grip, shoulder width, close grip, and pullups.

no, any grip is good. And OP do them on your back day. If your abs or other muscles are hurting you're obviously a bit weak in those areas. Once you get good at chins/pulls you can do heaps without feeling any effect the next day except for your back/arms.

dont go too wide though, stresses your rotator cuff without any attendant benefits. instead of doing all sorts of ridiculous grips, just add some wieght once you can baout 3 sets of 8-12

from my experience, pullups are quite easy to recover from. i.e. fit them into which ever is more convenient.
i used to do them twice a day. 3 sets of MAX-2 and 180 pushups.

How wide should the grip be for pullups?

I can't go that wide, just a little bit more than shoulder width, otherwise it gets harder mainly because my joint like cracks on the way down...

Similarly, how wide for chinups? I usually do shoulder-width or shorter for chinups.
