Is a membership to a gym really worth the trouble? If it is, what would /fit/ recommend me? The only thing I can find right now is a nearby YMCA.

You don't really NEED a gym as long as you have a fairly decent set of dumbells and your own two legs. Most strength building lifts can be done with dumbells, then you can run, jump rope, shadow box, etc. for cardio.

No, don't bother. Look for other places where you can get free gym access like a highschool or a community center.

About Dumbbells. What do they do exactly other than build muscles? How often should I do those and what weights should I pick up?

You can do isolation exercises to work on specific muscle groups. Lifting a light weight in multiple reps per set tones the muscle and burns calories. You can also do weighted compound exercises with squats and weighted sit-ups, to burn calories.

That's pretty much their main purpose: you either use them to build muscle, or to increase your muscular endurance. Before using them, set up a sort of routine for you (i.e. stagger your muscle groups throughout the week: work chest and triceps one day, back and biceps another, legs and shoulders another, then rest). This way you'll hit different groups with ample rest period.

Examples of exercises you can do with dumbells (just to name a few):
Incline dumbell bench
Dumbell bench
Dumbell shoulder press
Dumbell bicep curl
Dumbell forearm curl
Tricep extensions
Lunges

couldnt agree more. never been to gym in my life. running on a treadmill seems like a slow torture of bore to me. running, biking, playing various sports outside is the way to mix up ur cardio and avoid your workouts becoming stale. and you can muster up enough unique exercises with a pair of dumbbells to take care of the upper body

Problem with that is that most sporting activities are anaerobic. Outdoor biking/jogging excluded, of course.

The only real draw of a treadmill is consistency.

It's like paying people to give you an excuse to get fat.

Is it possible if you guys can give me some sort of tutorial in muscle stretching and workout? I am quite fond of muscle building.

you should find a committed workout partner. That way you both will force eachother to go.

provided the gym isn't a huge scam, you get access to plenty of equipment that, if used properly, would be so much better than a crappy set of dumbells. don't get a membership just to do an hour of treadmilling every day.

think of it this way... you wouldn't want to buy a top of the line computer just to play solitaire on it.
