Karate=sucks
Kung-fu: Depends, northern shoalin or wushu will probably get you physically prepared for a fight, though most of the moves won't work. Hung Gar or any other southern style would probably be more effective in techniques, although it won't prepare you physically.

Boxing: Definitely will help you kick ass, assuming your opponent doesn't try to sweep you or anything. Also boxing training is pretty intense,so you'd get stronger pretty quickly.

tl;dr: Boxing, Kung-fu are alright but Karate sucks.

you need to seriously outline your goals.

If you need to be strong, buff, and kick some schmucks ass in a few months: boxing

If you need to be functionally strong and not that buff and be able to kick the crap out of most people in a few years: karate

If you want to be as compact as possible while being strong as fuck AND be able to beat damn near everyone in 10 years: kung-fu
>> Anonymous
I took a northern shaolin style of wushu for a year and a half, my kicks and punchers were alot stronger, and my moves looked impressive but i find if i get in a serious fight i wouldnt use most of my moves or stances

With karate/kung fu you will be able to kill in one hit. If you don't want to kill people brazilian Jiu-Jitsu would be better, but it doesn't work very well with multiple opponents, if you need to fight with many people at the same time attack to kill, bite and aim in the eyes.

Boxing. I did Goju Ryu karate for a while, and it's pretty good.

Martial arts were created for combat in war.

"Martial arts are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. While they may be studied for various reasons, martial arts share a single objective: to defeat a person physically or to defend oneself from physical threat."

My experience is boxing tends to perform better in real life the most people, most karate places are mcdojos focused on unrealistic scenarios (some places are good, just be very wary of bullshit), but a good one can be a huge help, and I've never seen or heard of anybody doing any better in a fight as a result of kung fu training. Except maybe Bruce Lee, but he was a prick and a bully, and was a good fighter mostly because he broke tradition.

A mix of tae kwon do (80% kicks, instructors were good about seperating demonstration/competition stuff from self defense), boxing, and wrestling in high school has served me pretty well, I don't fight much though. Not being a prick and being semi-paranoid will do that.

What's the general consensus regarding Muay Thai here then?

Good, bad, shit? Curious on a personal level because I've decided to start actively training for the "fight-strength" I've always been aiming for, and my selecion consists of a Muay-Thai "school" with a few national champions to brag about, a boxing gym with a few medium names, and a shittyass mcdojo-ish Kung-Fu place.
>> Anonymous
>>189826

I second this. Also, try to watch the obscure but entertaining show Fight Girls if possible. They do Muai Thai and they scare me more than a lot of men.
>> Free Pepsi !!iXxa+hO94Mg
>>189826

As a kickboxer, I'd admit I'd rather not participate in Muay Thai competitions. Motherfuckers will accidentally cripple you with their elbows and knee strikes. Hell, originally, Muay Thai included a 9th limb to use - head bashes.

But the reason Muay Thai fighters are so strong is 1/2 based on their conditioning. Think about it, they live in impoverished villages. Kickboxing brings money if they win matches - they will train like their life depends on it.

So if you're some nancy boy who prances around and watches youtube videos of actual fighters, and then decided to enroll in a class that's 1 hour every three weeks and never practice, the style won't matter, you'll still suck balls.

Karate if you wanna win. If your any good at it, you will win a fight within the first few moves. Boxing if you wanna be some street fighting punk- Ideal if you live in North America because no one else knows how to fight. People just box or brawl on the ground. Kung Fu? Get real. Lol at your 3rd choice. Jujitsu if anything<<< Ground grappling.
>> Anonymous
People need to stop thinking inside one particular style. Each have their strengths and weaknesses.
Boxing has good stances, you can react better. Problem with boxing is kicking. legs are longer than arms.
Asian martial arts are problematic. They have many useful concepts that, when applied correctly, are devastating. However, unless you are willing to put in time and effort to actually master it, it'll serve you best as a parlor trick. Not only that, but even though you are able to learn from licensed professionals in the Western world, you're getting a more watered down form than its source. Also, avoid Tae Kwon Do like the plague.

But if I absolutely had to choose one style only, I'd stick with Muay Thai.

If it were up to me, I'd mix it with Jiu Jitsu, Judo (Fuck BJJ, they're just judo practitioners in denial.), or Sanshou.

Karate is somewhat lacking in a serious situation, Kung-Fu too. Boxing is okay, but you'll still get your ass handed to you by anyone who is proficient in either fighting their full body, or in take-downs and fighting on the ground. Go Muay Thai or Jujutsu instead.

Boxing would be your best bet if you want to help yourself in an actual fight. It's quick and effective, easiest to learn of the three.

Karate is exactly what anon said, it's basically power. And while most places are Mcdojos(will just hand you a black belt) it CAN be practical. Although it would only be practical if you learned it from someone who had actual training in the art(i.e. from Japan). Most of the applications take time and thinking to understand how to use them correctly.

Which leads to kung-fu. Kung-fu can be exactly as>>189387said. It takes years to perfect it, hence why you rarely ever hear about people using it in a fight or taking it to the ring. A majority of masters are Asian and have much respect for the art. When you learn Kung-fu, you are taught to avoid fighting by all cost. In a sense it's like that saying from Spiderman. "With great power comes great responsibility." And most often times when there is a fight with someone like this, they only have to use minimal of effort to take down an opponent, granted they have taken to heart and mind the ideals that encompass the art. Don't get me wrong, Kung-fu isn't for everyone and it shows. Kung-fu gets the worst rap here because it's exactly what it is: self-defense against an attacker. It isn't "I'm going to pick a fight to test my skills." People who learn it for that reason get what they deserve. The same could be said about karate, the only reason I recommend boxing is because, it is meant for fighting. It isn't like the later where it's priorities follow: self-defense, then fight. It's the other way around which makes it the most practical for what the OP's asking, bettering oneself in a fight.

Oh fuck you, just because you've watched a bunch of "x vs tkd" videos on youtube, mostly with the TKD guy being a dipshit that can't discern between practical and competition techniques, doesn't invalidate it. It generally performs pretty well in stuff like K1 or UFC when mixed or modified.

I just wish they'd stop using so many back-kicks in mixed competitions, sure it might be devastating when it hits, but ffs it almost never does, and it leaves them so open.

At age 12, Lee entered La Salle College and later he attended St. Francis Xavier's College. In 1959, at the age of 18, Lee got into a fight and badly beat his opponent, getting into trouble with the police.[10] His father became concerned about young Bruce's safety, and as a result, he and his wife decided to send Bruce to the United States to live with an old friend of his father's. Lee left with $100 in his pocket and the titles of 1958 Boxing Champion and the Crown Colony Cha Cha Champion of Hong Kong.

Many claim he was the best, and those who don't claim his focus was indeed in the movie business more often than not claim he was _at least_ extraordinary.

Guy had 6-7 proven and documented fights against someone who wasn't his students, and all his feats of strength were only witnessed by friends and family. Excuse me for my scepticism, but that stinks of "mysterious martial arts master"-bullshit.

Honestly the best way to go is to mix styles. Grappling and throwing (judo/BJJ/ju jutsu) with striking (boxing/kickbowing/karate). Either that or leanr some badass self defence.
I started in karate and got my black belt (not a great club, mostly tournament fighting) and have recently gone into BJJ and self defence and I prefer the latter.

Anyone who labels something as large as karate useless is dumb. If you join a MCdojo then yes, you will get your ass beat, but karate is, jsut like other martial arts (Haha except TKD) an art of war. I train at a Karate dojo and we also cross train in kickboxing, grappling (Combined greco roman Jui Jitsu and Judo) and self defense. Cross training all the way. But some of things I have learned from karate are invaluable, and learning to sue my lower body in a fight made me several times more dangerous. Cross train if you wanna win, don't limit yourself to one style.
>> Anonymous
>>191163
McDojo? Is that like McDonalds?
>> Anonymous
a kick is stronger than a punch, but it cant be faster, in a real fight(one that its 2 nicely matched oponents not a kickboxer vs a someone that doesnt know how to fight) a boxer with skill could easly block a kick from a skilled kickboxer and or even grab the leg
>> Anonymous
A mcdojo is a dojo that basically is in it only for the money and gives you a black belt in half or less the time usually required to get one, while teaching the person usually extremely poorly. I Have worked my ass off for over a year and I'm almost a green belt at my school, however many mcdojos give out black belts after a year or less. They are usually the reason people think the martial arts suck, because when a Mcdojo user uses them, they do.
>> Anonymous
But a full contact kick to the leg can give a boxer a bad dead leg since they aren't used to getting nailed in the legs. Thats why cross training is good. No one style is perfect
