148 lbs guy. Been doing Rippetoe's for 3 months now.

170 pounds 5x5 squats was alright. I managed to do all 5 sets with close-to-ideal form.

175 pounds oh man that's hard. I felt like i was doing 5 reps with my 3RM.

So yersterday i went to the gym, did 3 reps, then cried a bit. Then i did one set of 2 reps then stormed out of the gym in anger. I had such low focus and energy it was unbelievable. Is masturbation/6 hour of sleep this day/had a shitty breakfast reasons for my poor performance?

Today i did 3 sets of 5 reps, and 2 sets of 4 reps. Not still here, but better. What's happening? I feel like all the weights are heavier, much more opressing.

I pulled my lower back wich put me in pain a few days ago, if that helps. What causes me to have sub-optimal mental strenght? OR is it just that i hit a plateau?

Make sure you are getting a good warm up in. Do a couple warm up sets. Hell go do pre-exhausts on leg curls and extensions- get the blood pumping and then bang out some squats.

Also, sleep is pretty key, food is pretty key. If you're not eating well and getting enough sleep, you're missing out on the majority of the workout.

Your efforts in the gym are worth nothing without nutrition. It can keep you back even if your effort is 100%. Sleep helps, but 6 hours is normal for quite a few people, like me. Others need more.

Slam back some simple carbs and whey protein 30 mins before the wokout. Dextrose is the best kind of sugar here because it converts to glucose right away. Smarties(TM) candies are pure dextrose, btw, if you don't have a GNC nearby.

3 sets is the specified amount is why.

3 sets of 5 at the work weight.

1 set of 5 for deadlifts.

Follow the program exactly as specified and you will not have problems.

thank you so far for the help. what i remember is that i should be more warmed-up, eat 30 mins before leaving, and sleep well.

but during this thread i learned that rippetoe recommends 3 working sets of 5 reps, while stronglift's (another commonly cited source for strenght and mass gain on these boards) has *5* working sets of 5 reps.
there must be a reason for this differance and i am eager to hear it.

All I know is, after my 3 set of 5 squat... there is no fucking way I can do another 2.
