Hola, /fit/

I'm getting into shape (etc.) When I do push-ups, I do my best to keep my body straight (no floor-humping/arching my back) and not trying to use gravity/inertia to my advantage to up my push-up count.

However, I'm a newfag concerning what it feels like to actually get some excersize. When I do push-ups, it feels like it's excersizing my abs far more than my triceps.

Is it supposed to feel like that?

Sort of. A really strict pushup like you're talking about also works as a plank, which is an abdominal exercise. Keeping your body that straight requires all your abdominal muscles to remain tense.

So yes, your abs should feel like that. However, you should be feeling it in your triceps, chest and back a bit as well, or else you're not doing it right.

Yes.

It will work your abs. If your abs are weak and flabby, that's what you get.

It works your abs as well.

Try slowing your pushups down. Take 30 seconds to do one pushup, like you're doing it in slow motion.

that's kind of weird, just today i was thinking how strange it was that i wasn't feeling it in my abs at all

maybe i'm doing something wrong

jesus h christ.
you guys are doing it all wrong.
dont do push ups until your strong enough.
start off with chair dips (google how to) for chest and tris, then move onto full bodyweight dips for chest.
besides, go to 7chan and lok at their /fit/ area. Shits SO cash

Push-ups will exercise your arms, shoulders, back, legs, and abdomen. It takes a lot to keep the body straight. You'll feel the strain the most in whatever area is weakest. As you develop and become stronger in that area, the work will be felt in a different area. Eventually it will settle in your shoulders and upper arms.

The Pushup:
Start off in the down position with your chest on the ground.
Place your palms beside your chest but one or two inches away from your body.
When you push up focus on the contraction of your triceps, chest and shoulders.
Keep your back straight with your ass not in the air or sagging. The only thing flexing should be your arms.
When you are half way up your arms should be 45 degrees to your body not 90 degrees. After you go past half way your triceps take over and assist you in locking out your arms.
Now go back down, do this slow and focus on your back contracting and pulling your arms and body closer to the ground.
Repeat.

The beautiful thing about pushups is that they're one of the first things you can do. No need to baby it in unless the person is a real danger of quitting what they're doing.

I will make a full new thread on it later, but once you get down to under like 23% body fat, you should be doing pull ups and chin ups, which are pretty much the single greatest body weight exercise ever.

At one point I was over 30% body fat. Now at 18% and dropping. In the past I could do maybe 4 pull ups in a row. Now I can do more than 12 in a row, but normally just do 3sets of 10. I also have a bitching pullup/chinup/neutral grip up plan that'll have you busting out like 250 pull ups in a week.
