Working out on the Lat pull down, the Chest press and the bench press.

Is it a substitute for chin ups and push ups, or am I kidding myself?

ur partially right, the push up n sit ups work also stabilizers.
that wouldnt be the case for pull downs n benchpress

Free weights are always better, for the stabilizer muscles anon mentioned.

It's said that if you dont work the stabilizers your main muscle wont grow after a certain point, so they need to grow as well.

I do a kind of bench press with dumbbells.
that kinda thing?
I am very week when it comes to chin ups. I can barely do one, but I have felt myself getting stronger on the pulldown, going from 45 to 65kg. It doesnt translate back to chinups though.

Reading what you type hurts me...my eyes, my soul, everything. It hurts.

OP: Machines are never as good as free-weights. That said, you can 100% certainly make fantastic gains on them, although you should never completely forgo freeweights. Due to time/money constraints, I am forced to use machines almost 80% of the time. Is it ideal? Fuck no. Am I a n x-box hueg guy who's really going to be a good poster boy for machines? Hell no. But it's not like working out on some machines is as bad as most people make it out to be, honestly. You're not kidding yourself, but try to integrate as much free-weight stuff as possible.
