On push-ups: If you want to gain muscle, you should work in the 8-12 rep range. Tone/sculpt, wtf are you talking about. If your bodyfat is low, you'll look "toned". Crunches build muscle and tend to thicken your trunk. I am a fan of planks (make the muscle stronger without necessarily getting bigger).
Here's the deal. You eat more and lift heavy, you'll gain muscle. You eat less and lift heavy, you'll lose fat. That's extremely simplified, however.
If you want to go by conventional wisdom, you'd eat a moderately high-carb diet.
I, however, espouse a high-fat, low-carb, and moderate protein approach.
