There are good and bad forms of hypertrophy (increasing mass). You don't necessarily go for mass gain or maximum strength alone, as though it's black and white. You can do both, as well as train for definition, muscle striations (the dark lines that reveal your muscle) and muscule symmetry.

"Size complex" is an irrelevant psychological issue. Most people who bodybuild go to the gym, get their work done and get out.
>> Anonymous

I train for endurance, strength, stability, mobility, balance, speed, power and agility.

Utilizing calisthenics, kettlebells, olympic lifting routines, HIIT, cross-fit athletics, and my imagination coupled with any object I can find.

I also eat like a hog when I get the time, so size is just an added advantage. Aesthetics are way down on my list of importance, also I was once obscenely fat - so now my body is scarred regardless.

This is my life story until now, and it is to be continued.

Pic related, fuck fate - there's only the power of will.
>> Anonymous
I was into a lot of functional training, cross training, HIIT cardio, and circuit training.

Thing is, while I gained almost 20 lbs of muscle, I also lost over 100 lbs of fat, which left with a lot of lax tissue.

I ate right, making sure I was losing only between .5 and 2 lbs per week, but I'm still left with some loose skin in the abdominal area.

I consulted with a plastic surgeon, and he said that I'm a good candidate for an abdominoplasty.

I was pretty disappointed...it was a little unfair after doing a shit ton of work, only to be left with such an annoying hang up in the end like loose skin.

So before I do anything drastic, I'm going to fully exhaust every measure possible to see if I can remedy the problem on my own.

This is why I'm currently on a serious bulking program, looking to gain around 20-25 lbs of mass over the course of the next year, to see if I can fill out the skin and tighten things up all around, THEN pursue a low bodyfat percentage (ala bodybuilding competitions).

If THAT didn't work, then it's off to the surgeon.
>> Anonymous
>>89735
Bodybuilding is concerned entirely with hypertrophy, anything else is secondary. Functional strength means heaviest possible cleans, squats, presses, pulls, etc. It also includes bodyweight:strength ratio, like ability to do pullups, pushups, handstand pushups, etc etc
>> Anonymous
>>89735
When I think functional strength, I think gymnasts, acrobats, breakdancers, those kind of guys.

Where it's functional because they have the strength (primarly in the CNS, not from fibre size) to do incredible things with their body, that if they built strength by size, they'd be incapable of doing, because the power:weight ratio just would not work.
>> Anonymous
>>89743
You can definitely do both. You might not be able to break world records if you maintain both, but who the fuck cares. Being able to deadlift 450 and at the same time do 30 pullups is awesome in my book.
>> Anonymous
>>89744
See, I started off being interested in bodyweight feats before building, so to me 30 pullups was a warmup at one point (was alot lighter) now I do sets of 8 weighted pullups and no idea my bodyweight max, how things change:P

To me, 30 pullups is nothing in terms of bodyweight, 3 one arm chinups a size, 10 planche pushups (straddle, legs together = just 5) a one arm front lever would be sick, but that's verging on godliness.

Or the all mighty close to impossible, it's where you hold yourself so your chin's above the bar, but your arms are straight, so that they're running perpindicular to the bar.

Beastiest move, ever.

Except for MAYBE a victorian on the rings done properly (yet to see one done with full extension)

That is -exactly- what my plan and circumstance is at the moment. Bulk up to fill out, but I'm not upset if I need surgery. They can do it with minimal scarring now, and it's cheap since I'm in Canada. Also, scars are killer and I know a few girls who are into them aswell.

In b4 flames at my interpersonal relations with said females.

>>89731

Lol at you typing out your shitty regional accent/dialect. What did this guy say again? Something about size?

Like I said, the weight room can accomplish more than just one extreme. In fact, some bodybuilders alternate microcycles training for maximum strength, training for mass gain, and also for definition.
>> Anonymous
>>89773
You can't train for definition, you can train for 2 types of hypertrophy (sarcoplasmic and myofibriliar) you can train to one of those 2 types of hypertrophy, low rep (<5 or so reps) strength (singles as in powerlifters included) and endurance.

It all comes down to:
Density
Sets
Reps
Weight

There's no way you can build striations or definitions, but you can cut to them, fat, that is.

And I type how I speak because it's natural to me, I feel like a cunt saying "well give me 10 then" it gives the wrong impression, tone is an important part of communication, and I try to bring as much information across as possible, so it's only logical I'd try to use the tone of my writing to my advantage.

To get started you only really need to spend about $140 on a pair of climbing shoes, a chalk bag, and a carabiner. When you boulder you don't want to go higher than ten feet, so all you really need are those three pieces of gear. Add the harness, more carabiners, rope, etc. as you start doing long, high climbs.

Also, black diamond has a really convenient starter pack for about $80 that comes with a harness, carabiner, chalk bag, and carrying case. Great for beginners.

Oh.

lol.

Well, ya see. Let's pretend there is a comp in 15 weeks. This is how a bodybuilder's workout would look

Weeks 1-8: Bulk up. Eat lots of protein, get muscles huge. Train "functional strength".

Weeks 9-13: Eat less. Start using machines to improve symmetry. Train "Bodybuilder strength".

Weeks 14-15: Fucking starve yourself. Keep working symmetry. Hopefully you should peak (be at approx 0.5-1% body fat) just after or before the comp.

So, I see what you guys are saying. But don't just say that bodybuilders have no strength. It's a little difficult to squat 1000 pounds, benchpress 600 pounds, or leg press (yes, a machine) 2500 pounds.

tl;dr: bodybuilders don't use only machines, only about halfway through cycle.

from INTENSITY OF STRENGTH TRAINING FACTS AND THEORY: RUSSIAN AND EASTERN
EUROPEAN APPROACH, Vladmir M. Zatsiorsky, Ph.D.
Biomechanics Lab The Pennsylvania State University, University Park,
Pennsylvania and Central Institute of Physical Culture-Moscow, Russia

Methods of maximum efforts.
Considered superior for improving both intramuscular and intermuscular
coordination. The method of maximum effort should be used to bring forth the
greatest strength increments. Central nervous system inhibition, if it exists, is
reduced with this method; thus, the maximal numbers of MU’s areactivated with
optimal discharge frequency and the biomechanical parameters of movement
and intermuscular coordination are similar to analogous values in a main sport
exercise. A trainee then “learns” to enhance and to “memorize” these changes in
motor coordination (evidently on an unconscious level).
It was previously mentioned that the magnitude of resistance should be close to
TFM while employing this training method. To avoid high emotional stress, CFM
must be included into the training routine only intermittently. If the aim of a
training drill is to train movement (i.e. both intramuscular and intermuscular
coordination are the object of training), the recommended number of repetitions
per set is one to three. Exercises such as the snatch or the clean and jerk may
serve as an example (Figure 2). When training muscles, rather than movement
training, is the drill objective (i.e., the biomechanical parameters of the exercise
and intermuscular coordination are not of primary importance since the drill is not
specific and its technique is different from the sport technique of the main
exercise) the number of repetitions increases. One example is the inverse curl
(Figure 5), in which the typical number of repetitions is four to eight.
>> Anonymous
mouthbreather. fuck.
>> Anonymous
....

The method of maximum efforts, when employed with a small number of
repetitions (one or two), has the limited ability to induce muscle hypertrophy. This
is because only a minor amount of mechanical work is performed and in turn, the
amount of contractile proteins degradated is limited.
