Breathing problems. wonk !!SOJTvLiutsP
Okay, here's the skinny.

As long as I can remember, I've only been able to breathe out of one nostril at a time, alternating which is stuffed. There have only been a few days that I can remember where I could breathe easily.

What could it be, /fit/? Allergies?

I have this problem. I try to blow my nose, but then it gets worse and both nostrils get irritated and they close up.

I blow my nose after I washed my face, and maybe it's some of the moisture left in the nostrils, but they don't get irritated as much after I wash my face and they are exposed to some moisture.

like 10/12 months a year I can only breathe out of one or the other nostril also. I went to the doctor and she said it might be because of my deviated septum. All the fucking whore did for me though was give me nostril spray which did fuck all. Think I could get a free nose job because of this?

get a humidifier. I think this happens to everyone if they have a cold or allergies. I get it sometimes if it's really very dry. A humidifier makes a huge difference.
And don't get that "cold moisture" shit. It works a thousand times better with heat to disperse the humidity. The more warm the room is, the more moisture the air can hold.

Also I have no allergies.

I have this same problem sometimes. I have a bit of a deviated septum, yet allergies afflicted me as well. I went to an ear nose and throat specialist who put me on allergy pills. I don't take them that much but they do help when I do.

I definitely have this. I was wondering what it was called.

Identical to you OP.

I got a septoplasty a few years ago to fix my deviated septum. Before that, I could never breathe through my left nostril. Since the air didn't circulate properly, I used to get sinus infections a lot. Now it's all much better.

It was $3000, but with insurance it was only like $60. Now our insurance got nerfed so it would be like $600 today, but still worth it for a relatively permanent improvement to breathing.

I can identify. Dry air seems to cause irritation particularly for me, but sudden temperature changes can also trigger sneezing for me, which is then followed by irritation, excess mucous production, and then stuffiness. I have been tested and have no allergies, so I can only conclude I have very sensitive sinuses. If you don't have/can't get a humidifier try neti(I think it's unpleasant but it helps). For the record, chronic sinusitis is not uncommon in my family; I have two relatives who have had to have their impacted sinuses flushed, so I pay attention to this pretty closely. I suspect I have narrow nasal passages, which causes the problem to be more pronounced. Good luck, it's a never ending battle here but proper hydration is the general cure as far as I have found...

I had the same issue. Went to an ear/nose/throat doc after going to an allergist who gave me nasonex which helped for all of maybe an hour. Had a severley deviated septum and the "fingers" inside the sinuses were inflames (I can't remember what he called them). Had surgery to fix the septum and reduce the size of the "fingers". I can breathe. Best thing I ever did for myself.

ITS A COMMON FUCKING PROBLEM!!!
I too have it, as long as I can remember.

I have that problem but the nostril I can breathe from switches every few hours.

problem due to inferior genetics.

wait this is a problem? I always thought that this is the way noses work.
huh. Interesting.

I have always had the same issue, and I've found I can sleep on either side and the top-most nostril will open up. The shitty part is, my right nostril makes a horrible amount of wind noise, so I cant really get to sleep on my left side, due to the racket inside my head. I fucking hate it. I would love to get my septum fixed.

I have the same problem as OP. Here's an easy way to test for it (as if it's not obvious):

Close one nostril with a finger. Then take a deep breath and blow it out the open one as fast as possible. Now repeat with the other nostril. If you blow out your eardrum when using your bad nostril (like I just did) then I've got bad news.

I know which nostril is good switches when I'm sick but I'm not sure about the rest of the time. And I don't *think* that I have allergies (although my brother is allergic to everything but dirt so that's scary). I haven't payed very close attention to it but I've always known it was there. I'll have to start observing it a little more closely to see if the bad nostril switches.
