What is your max heart rate when you do cardio? Mine is 140 on the elliptical.

i'd rather burn more calories. i spend an hour on the elliptical and burn 600 calories. if i wasted all my energy in a short time, sure my heart rate would climb but i'd only be able to sustain such a high amount of effort for 20-30 minutes, which means fewer calories burned.

1. Don't believe calorie counters on machines, they are completely inaccurate.
2. You'd better be a girl if you are using an elliptical.

I do 166-172 on the elliptical. I haven't been checking lately.

stationary bike gets boring and a knee injury makes running on a treadmill impractical

Different anon here, but why ask for max heart rate if you're doing sub-maximal work? So, you're burning 600 calories in an hour, is it burning fat for you while you sleep? Shorter-intenser workouts ellicit a higher basal metabolic response when after you workout.
