Hey, /fit/.

How is swimming for weight loss?

good

swimming is great for weight loss, if you are quite overweight, it provides a low impact method to push yourself hard

OP here. 5'7", 220lbs.

Lost about 20lbs in the last two weeks just walking 1-3 miles every other day or so. Trying to make it a daily routine to walk at least 1 mile a day.

How much will semi-regular swimming thrown into the mix help? My apologies, incidentally, if I sound clueless and vague. I really haven't had a very healthy lifestyle lately.

Don't fucking worry yourself with specifics. Just swim, walk, run, and get out.

It is great exercise if you actually swim. Treading water doesn't count, do as many laps as you can as fast as you can and you will also work out your muscles.

I've heard that treading water was pretty good for strengthening?

When I learned to swim, I learned the breaststroke -- which is mostly what we did laps with. I assume that's adequate.

Though in all honesty, I have a tendency to dick around totally submerged until I have to come up for air.

Not OP, but also curious about swimming.

Does it matter how long the laps are, or is it more dependent on how long you swim for? Over the summer I'm going to get most of my swimming done in my cousin's backyard pool but it's not really big.

And, getting nit-picky now, but "proper form" is to have your head in the water while swimming and turning your head to come up for air. Does it matter if you do this? I can't seem to keep my face in the water when I swim.
