Alright, /fit/, just a regular guy who never lifted weights before start of this week (except for dicking around in the weight room during allotted time in PE back in High School, now that I think of it why the fuck would any PE teacher let a bunch of stupid 15 year olds loose and expect them to work out without instruction?).

Anyways, on Monday I started Stronglifts 5 x 5, even though I started with empty bars as suggested for newcomers I could definitely feel it the following day, a good sign I presume.

Tonight though, I was dreading the Deadlift as I have since Monday. I just know that it is one surefire way to fuck up your back, and with no instruction other than Rippetoe and Stronglifts, I went for it anyways. Twas' only 40kg (6'2 and 190 lbs by the way) but after one set of 5 I could really feel it in my lower back. I guess I'm either doing it right or wrong, but my biggest focus was squeezing my glutes and keeping my back straight. Should I be feeling the burn in my lower back?

Finally, are deadlifts a smart thing for a newcomer to do in the first place?

Instructors have always told me to never do something I didn't know how to do. They also said that if you don't have confidence in what you are going to try or are currently doing, not to do it because it will only sap your strength and stamina.

Well I've been reading up on the movements pretty thoroughly for the past few weeks and I've felt pretty good about all the other movements. I think that further practice will build it up for me.
