today is chest day for me, /fit/. I do dumbbell bench presses...not the bar.

How many of you prefer the dumbbells over the bars? When doing my exercises, I only will use the bars that are angled since the straight ones hurt my wrists.

i do both.

if your wrists hurt then try changing your technique. a lot of people have shitty bench technique.

Best to mix it up. I usually switch every other chest day.

i have broken both my wrists before...i think that might be why it hurts

How come it requires more?

Your arms have to work together to stabilize the bar above your body.

I would have thought that depriving the arms of each other's support would do more.

Uhh yes and no. What you said is true but when you use the bar you're developing your muscles to work together, as a team. Not to say you shouldn't do dumbbell presses, it's always good to include both in your workout but dumbbell presses are not a replacement for the classic bench press. Dumbbell presses require more from the arms to individually stabilize but if your focus is on the chest and overall upper body strength then the barbell bench press is the way to go.

I'll keep that in mind.

i dont agree. Using the bar lets each arm support the other. It is easier in that respect.

I like using dumbbells because it's easier lift to failure without a spotter. When I go to the gym it's by myself or my girlfriend who wouldn't have much fun or be much help spotting my bench press.

I go to a gym which has dumbbells up to 160lbs. And it's a pretty standard gym.

Enjoy your poorly equipped place of exercise.

If you have done barbell for the past few weeks do dumbbell for the next few and then switch back. It keeps things fresh, and can stop a plateau before it starts. Anyone who says dumbbell presses are "worse" than barbell presses doesn't know what they are talking about and should lurk more.
