you are 'right' in the optimal sense of motor learning, ie do pullups to get better at doing pullups, as its SPP
versus the more GPP of doing 'similar, but different' exercises, that train the same areas, but utilize different motor pathways.
both work. it all depends. i doubt that i should share this, as it will get abused...but i added 20lbs to my 1RM chin by training biceps specially for a few weeks. mind you, my ratio of chinning to curls is 1000:1, so likely i am an outlier in these things, but still....
