saw a discussion about this earlier and decided to make a thread.

when in a cutting phase, since weight lifting isnt too beneficial when it comes to building actual muscle what is it good for other than avoiding muscle atrophy?

i'm guessing it helps the cut abit by helping fat loss i suppose if you arent doing cardio and doing that it helps burn something, since muscle burns fat. but you arent really building muscle?

sounds stupid but I'm really confused as to why some people do both and some only do cardio when cutting, also what about squats? they are the universal workout and something that people here on /fit/ repeat to do over and over, but if you do squatz you cant necessarily do cardio that day either?

weightlifting burns calories and keeps you from losing too much strength

Your body will lose muscle no matter what you do (apart from steroids), but lifting will definitely help in retaining it.

And you could do squats and cardio in the same day. If it's low-intensity cardio, and/or you do it several hours before squatting. The day or two after squatting is when you will want to avoid doing cardio, because not only will it hurt your recovery, but your legs will be sore.
