so i just signed up for a gym membership through my job. the problem is now i anticipate being really anxious about going to the gym since i have no idea what to do when i get there and although i'm relatively slim i'm pretty out of shape. tips?

No reason to worry. Everyone has to start out somewhere. I recommend you try to find out what you would like to do before you go there, if you don't you could always ask for some advice when you get there.

i need to build upper body strength, and also do some aerobic exercise

I had the same problem. I spent 3 days on the ellipticals because I wasn't quite sure about the free weights yet.

Eventually I just jumped in, and it was fine. No one else cares, and at starting weights the exercises won't accidentally destroy you.

My problem is that I don't know what to do with the free weights once I get there.

Look up the basics online, then start with light weights. Ask someone to spot you if you're still not sure..

I'm a member of a classy health club where guys high five each other while doing 1/8th squats with huge weights on the Smith Machine, when they're not busy doing curls.

You probably shouldn't ask then. Better not to risk buttrape

It's tougher than you think to avoid buttrape while doing barbell rows.
