Just started training and doing squats. And squatted I did, but goddamn the neck pain was a bitch. I have a really bony neck and I think it contributes. Also, my gym has these near the squat rack. Do I miss out on something important if I use it? Will I be the laughing stock of strangers? Am I doing it wrong?
i used the cushion for a while but after a few months I just ditched it. It's more comfortable without one, if you place the bar correctly. Use your traps and delts.

rest the bar on your traps you dumb shit fuck headand dont even worry about being the laughing stock of anything cause you already are. even on the internet
there should be no pain if you position the bar correctly.it doesnt rest on your neck
