For me alcohol was a solution and to a great extent it worked. I joined the military at 18 and a I had a hard time adjusting to the life. The work was fine and I was capable, but I had a hard time dealing with the idea that my life was, at times, in the hands of people I wouldn't trust with a fucking butter knife. Alcohol helped me get away for a while. My friends thought I was an alcoholic, but in my mind I just had a way of dealing with the stresses that didn't involve being overly aggressive or emo.
I had an adjustment period when I left the service, but I've been clean for five years now. The stress is gone. The alcohol is gone. I'd invite people to look at their relationships and environment before they blame the bottle. Yes, heavy drinking isn't healthy, but sometimes it's simply a reaction to something tangible and serious.
