When I was in school, I always found that early morning was the best time to workout. I'm thinking of doing this again because I'm always exhausted when I get home from work. I'm curious though, what should I eat before going for a run? How soon after eating should I run?

Something light like cereal.

Wait about 20 minutes

Eat light, like half a meal (don't want cramps/sickness), of complex carbs before running. When you're done, eat the other half of a meal that's heavy in protein. Protein is best absorbed for building muscle within 30 minutes of a workout.

Oatmeal!

i have to have an empty stomach when i run.

but if you do eat, something easy to digest. Oatmeal is the best. Steel cut oats.

The best thing to do is run on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, of course after some light worm ups and stretching. Or you could drink some green tea, or coffee right before you run.

Agreed.
In high school I missed the bus all the time, so I ended up having to ride my bike four miles to school and back every other day. Did wonders for my health and stamina, but I quit after I graduated. Now I'm a fatass again and I wanna restart that routine.
