Better for cardio than anything else. I wear them to row, which helps a lot with comfort and not getting nasty rashes. I don't think you'd need them if you're purely weight lifting. I buy the long ones for $20 at a discount sporting goods store. The shorter ones (mid-thigh level) are like $17.50, so not that expensive. I have two pairs and hit the gym 4 times a week. Beware though, if you're wearing the same pair 3+ days a week, they WILL smell like crap. And by crap, I mean soaking them in Febreeze doesn't do shit. If you have an iPod armband, it will smell like that but worse.
P.S. Wear football/running shorts over your compression shorts. Well, unless you're George Zimmer and want everyone to check out your package. In which case, gtfo.
