I'm joining the army (European/special ops training) soon, so I need to improve my workout routine. I need to increase my endurance, get stronger knees & legs and also lose a slight amount of body fat. I think my current routine might suck, so please tell me what works and what doesn't:

Day 1: Upper body strength

Day 2: Nothing.

Day 3: Long run (45 min)

Day 4: Nothing

Day 5: Lower body strength

Day 6: Nothing

Day 7: Interval running (4x4 min with 2 min walking in between each

Yeah, you should try to work major muscle groups at least twice a week to see real improvement. Also squats.

Walking long distances with a heavy load is probably the best training you can do. You will have to do a lot of this.

Yeah, you're absolutely right, but
>Walking long distances with a heavy load
without strong legs and knees = damage.

So I need to walk with relatively light loads until I get my squats coming along nicely.

I just had a long chat with a USAF Pararescue team leader today, and asked him pretty much the same question...what my fat ass needed to do to prepare for indoc.

Run every other day...one day of intervals, the other long distance. Try to run farther than you will during your indoc course (I assume Euros have one) for your distance days, and just work on cutting your time on interval days.

On non-running days, do strength training....free weights or pushups/situps/pullups etc...stay off the machines for the most part.

Take your seventh day off...he didn't say that specifically, but I know offhand you don't want to burn yourself out.

Focus on improving one thing at a time. Again, don't burn yourself out. You need to be going back to the gym every day.

I don't know if your service does any water training, but if it does, start swimming. Work it into your cardio days.

Most of all, when you're finally in your indoc course, don't give up, no matter how hard your instructors harass you. That's the whole fucking point of indoc. All those assholes, muscleheads, etc who brag about how buff they are will wash out ahead of you. Just keep focused.

Oh yes, and this. Ruck march every so often, to check your progress.

OP here. Great advice, and not that much different from what I'm doing now! Except I had one day between workouts. I'll try to compress my routine and not have so many days off.

Please elaborate, because as far as i was aware you did not apply for special ops, you apply for the regular army and serve a year, then go through para training and other assosciated training before you can even apply.

Sternum pushups till you throw up.

In my country, and I assume in most others, you can choose between many different sections of the army under which to serve (ie. Airfore: pilot, mecanic - Navy: chief, machinist - Army: artillery, cavalry, sanitry, communications - Spec ops: paratrooper, coastal ranger etc.)

Just to clarify, it might have been more correct for me to say that I'm joining the military in my initial post, and that I'll be serving for a spec ops sub-division.

Elaborate enough?

What country?

If by spec op you mean something like scouts, then yes.

Spec ops are special for a reason.

I looked into it, and you're almost correct. The division I will serve under has two parts. The first, which I will participate in, is a one year training program, after which you can, if qualified, join the second operative part.

would you please explain the concept of sternum pushups?

It might be a bad translation.
A pushup with your palms placed together under your ribcage.
