If you hurt your knee, the best bet for a cardio workout would be an elliptical, followed by ski machines, cycling, then running. If your knee is that really banged, I suggest air squats for now and light deadlifts every once in a while. Lunges and step-ups would also be good.
I tore the lateral menisci in my right knee 3 years ago, and doing the air squats was very therapeutic. The only time it hurts is when I do something stupid and not biomechanically correct. Remember, TECHNIQUE IS PARAMOUNT. If it hurts, you're probably doing it wrong.
