Sup /fit/
I have a doubt about working abs and losing that damn belly fat i have (i'm so slim.... but i have an african kid belly that scares me). I want to get rid of it for summer (here's winter) because i want to look good in a bikini and not like a hueg manatee when going to the beach.

I've been doing some research and some dietists says that making abs don't work and that cardio is the best way, others said the opposite.

What's the real drill? i don't want to lose weight (i'm underweight due a familiar methabolic issue), just get ride of that ugly belly.
Also, is there anything i can take as a dietary complement to help the burn of fats?

hints: 5,4", female, 24 years, 110lbs. And since this year's a coooold winter, i just want to eat legumes as lentills or beans and stews.

thanks~

by abs i mean crunches, sorry for my mistake (english is not my native language). The question is: crunches or cardio!? I have an eliptical bike on my house, so tactically, i can do both, but i want to do the most effective

here's a pic of my flabby belly (pic taken for showing a costume that i WOULDN'T wear in public till i get a tonified and flat stomach to my friends, that already know my issue...)

You're going to want to eat protien.

Meat, rice and beans, or other protien rich meals. I'm not gonna lay them out for you, since you know what you like to eat, and I don't.

Eat more, but be sure to lift weights.

Do squats dead lifts, and bench presses, those three lifts IMHO are more important than crunches in getting a six pack.

Do you know you're body fat%? You don't look fat, but you may be pre disposed to retain weight on your stomach so it's gonna be a pain. Also, if you can't see your abs, it's either becuase you A have to much body fat, or you have no msucle to speak of.

The second is almost never the case.

So I'd say cut using some cardio while lifting, and eating a high protein some fat diet.

OP here. *taking notes* so, the protein that lentills and beans are good to grow muscle. That's ok. I don't use to eat too much meat, because now is sooo expensive here.

I don't know my body fat %, but under the fat there's muscle. I'm pretty muscular in my arms and legs, and my belly is hard under the fat (sounds weird... but is true. Even when i have my muscles relaxed, you can actually feel the six pack under...)

Anything else? I already cutted off soda, candies and bread. I'm eating oath bran cookies instead for breakfast.

Latin American? Nice body overall... but since you don't care to hear that: yeah, you do have a very slight belly, which no one but you would really notice.

How to lose it? Working abs will just push it out further, because you'll be building a strip of muscle right underneath the fat, accentuating it more. Cardio and a good diet would work, since you are a girl and have no need of actual fitness. Looks are everything! Teehee!

So, eat no more than 1200 calories a day, mostly from protein sources and small amounts of carbs and fat, preferably dairy products like cottage cheese or fish like salmon, plus take fish oil tablets, at least 6 a day, plus one multivitamin tablet.

Take a break of several days duration every second week in order to eat normally: this will speed your dieting rather than slow it.

No. Upgrade your calories a little more than that. Seriously, the worst thing you can do is eat to little, you'll metabolize muscle then which is bad. Start at around 1600, and if you aren't getting results cut down 50 calories a day.

Good. I live in Chile, so salmon is very cheap here (we "cultivate" salmons on the south of the country). Grilled salmon will be added to my diet.

anything else?

Thank you, and is like you say, i have this issue and it's me who is complicated (and because of that, i want to work to fix it). The people that surrounds me are always saying that i'm too slim and some of my aunts believes that i'm anorexic

1600 calories would be maintenance for someone her size, actually. 1200 calories will induce a slow weight loss, but I am changing my mind as I consider her small size, and I lower my recommendation down even further to 800 calories. On so few calories, it becomes vital that the foods are nutritious (not oatbran cookies) but it can be done somewhat healthily. Eat mostly protein except for dark green leafy vegetables like spinach.

Will her metabolism suffer on 800? Yes. That is why she needs breaks every few weeks, of 4-5 days duration, in which she eats 1600 calories of good healthy foods. The fish oil and multivitamins are crucial here, also.

Ephedrine would help your weight loss, if your country has not banned it. I don't mean to be an enabler to anorexia, but since you already are determined on weight-loss, low calories and ephedrine would do the trick.

244012 is right on.
there is no such thing as spot reduction. doing crunches only will not kill your fat, ever.

You can get lipo on your stomach OP.

Or you could bulk up then cut until you are a healthy weight, but less fat.

You're hot. Don't change, seriously.

I doubt she wants to bulk. Only guys are into that. Most girls don't give a fuck about muscle.

Please don't do this. If they want to change, it's their decision.

I was trying to provide encouragement, so that even if she wasn't able to change she'd feel good about herself.

You're right though, it's definitely up to her.

this is a lie. though there is no such thing as spot reduction, you don't lose all your fat equally. it is not as if you are "draining a lake".

Silence! She may be 'acceptable' but it can ALWAYS be better, no matter who you are.

>>YOUR BODY IS A LAKE OF FAT IT DRAINS EQUALLY THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SPOT REDUCTION

Kinda true, but also kinda not. Fat mainly is stored in specialised cells which continuously break down and export fats and import and create fats. The effect is not so fluid as a lake, but some fat does travel when it's been depleted in one area.

However, more fat is stored in special places where it doesn't interfere with movement e.g. triceps and belly. Thus, fat can be lost from these areas more dramatically.

/fit/, I think you should know that fat is a necessary tissue, and also very hormonally active. Belly fat doubly so, due to it's position on the liver. The discovery of the hormonal activity of fat is really, really new, so next to nothing is known about manipulating it.

OP, it's really gonna be hard to advise you, not knowing your diet, your genetic condition, hormones etc. Generic advice: the heart is the best (only) muscle for burning fat, and the side benefits of cardio are nothing to be sniffed at.

And let me end by saying I'd hit>>243993any day of the week.

OP again. In my case, that's not true. I used to weight about 160lbs before, and all my body "shrinked" but my belly. All the fat that i have is in my stomach. All people is different, i.e. i have a friend who gains weight and inmediatly, her ass grows making her looks like a pear. I just get more stomach and i lose my waist like there's no tomorrow.

Thank you /fit/ for the help, i will start to do deadlifts and squats and eating more protein. And also thanks for the compliments hehehe, but as 244193 says, it can be ALWAYS better.
