Whats the best way to build upper body strength that won't require using weights every hour of the day.

Do a fuckload of pushups every day. Vary between different styles and start doing handstand pushups as soon as you're able to.

Seconded, read Naked Warrior by Pavel Tsatsouline OP. I attempt one armed pushups all the time: while waiting for oatmeal to cook, kettle to boil, download to finish. Greasing the groove actually fucking works.

Okay, so I just started reading the book, and I'm not far at all, but I just had to ask, it's not all bull shit, right? I mean, the way the book makes it sounds is like "oh you'll get uber strong, rawr rawr rawr" and it's obvious that that won't happen, but is it actually a good book? Are there good techniques, tips, etc. in it? Because right now it just sounds like one of those "lol this program is so great listen to these testimonials!" kind of things.

I am loving it. you don't know me, and this is the internets, but I picked up a chin bar and set it up in the doorway of my computer room. at first, I could do only a single overhand chin from a dead hang. I would just pop one off every time I walked back and forth. WIthin a month, I could do 6, within 2 months, 8. 6 months later, I can knock of 10. I do the same with pushups. I can rip out 20 clapping push ups with my feet up on a chair for extra leverage, without breaking a sweat. I am way into the "greasing the groove" and the "leave yourself with an extra rep worth of energy" recommendations. very good stuff. within 6 more months, I will be where I want to be physically, just by doing this crap and some easy runs and situps..
