I got my ear pierced in july of 07' and a year later it hasn't healed. I didn't touch it at all initially except to clean it. Then I negated cleaning it all together and it started discharging from time to time. I exacerbated it by trying to gently squeeze it a bit. Now the barbell is pretty much sealed tight due to the discharge. It must have gotten in the threads. It still hurts enough that I have trouble removing it. I took care of it a little bit recently so it doesn't really discharge any more.

I really want to know if its okay to soak it in warm water for extended periods of time in order to remove the discharge from the threads.

warm water & salt for 15 mins, then spray with disinfectant, then off to get medical help.

When the seal breaks, turn it several times per day like you should have been doing to prevent this.

Your first mistake appears to be using a hoop (I'm guessing that's your earring in the picture). ONLY use a gold or silver straight bar for the first 6 months of piercing.

Seek medical attention immediately.

Go to your piercer.

And if you don't want to try that, do a SEA salt soak. ONLY sea salt. Table salt will hurt it. It's best if you can submerge the piercing, but if you have to, use a cotton ball and soak it on there for as long as possible.

OP here.

I do actually have a titanium barbell. The hoop in the pic is from wikipedia. I have a complimentary bag of sea salt from my piercer as well as provon medical soap to be used after the salt soak.

The whole point of my post was to say that the actual barbell cap is stuck. As in I can't unscrew it. I got my ear pierced because I was given an awesome brand new earring. But I can't remove the piercing and therefore can't use my awesome earring. Would soaking it for a prolonged period in JUST warm water be wise? I just really want to get it off and soaking it seems to be the answer.

Also, the piercing I want to put in is a pure silver stud type with a fastener on the back. I know they say not to use silver studs in an unhealed piercing but... How bad would that be when looking at my situation?

Considering that you're talking about all this discharge, it would be horrible. Your piercing is infected. At least wait until it heals up to change out the jewelry. How long have you had it pierced?
