Does the bench press build any functional strength? Does it translate over to any movements in certain sports?

If something heavy falls on you when you're lying on your back, you can lift it off of you.

Punch/throw/push movements

e.g. handoff in rugby.

I imagine if I'm ever caught in a building in an earthquake I stand a far better chance of escaping with increased chest strength.

Doesn't really help with punching, punching and throwing are developed through punching and throwing and the kinetic chain that goes from foot to glute to oblique, so on and so forth. Bench pressing does help with pushing in shit like football where you have some kind of active resistance.

Bench pressing is a fine lift to train, but if I had to choose one or the other, I would not hesitate to train the overhead press. It's far more functional (think about how often you lift something above your head versus how often you have to lie on your back and press something up.

you can impress the wimmins with your 1-handed pushup abilities

No it doesn't. In fact, it actually DESTROYS MUSCLE!

It is probably the most useless exercise of them all, next comes the biceps curl. But it is funny that a lot of ppl do only those two.

yeah, you gotta be lying down to push or otherwise it won't move at all. In fact, your chest won't activate unless you're lying down. You need to shut up.

You do more horizontal pushing than you do vertical. Opening doors for example. Why do weak people lean on a heavy door and push with their legs? Because they have no chest strength. But i'm sure if they were lying in the door way they'd be able to open it easily though. Fucking moron.

OP here. what is a more effective chest exercise.
in b4 pushups

Okay, so that's one thing. If they actually made doors that were difficult to open, you would have a point. And anyone who's actually trying to move something heavy has the sense to lean into it anyway.

Only if you consider upper body strength useful.

Is obviously, oblivious. Get off your high horse and try a sport instead of rambling about something you know nothing about. Enjoy your cartoon's and t.v. dinners.

Any time you push something you use your chest. example Blocking in football, Shot put in track and field.
Every time you throw a punch you use your chest. Also as someone mentioned in rugby.

name all the daily activities that require you to push forward. Now name those that require you to push up. ok then.

no weight lifting exercise is "practical" because nothing we do requires excessive strength. There's a reason we built machines.
