When you work out you are using carbs, burning some fat, and tearing up muscle. In my mind(and what worked for me) was mainly a protein(not meat necessarily, WHOLE PROTIEN) diet and lots of water. Any American gets lots of carbs and the necessary amount of fat just from eating bullshit here and there at work or school, but any meal that you can prepare while you have time/opportunity should be lean, whole, protien and water. That's as simple as I can make it.
Oatmeal and salads are just going to replace the carbs you burned and offer you very little in the way of usable proteins to rebuilds the muscles you've rediscovered.
