So who here does Yoga? Instead of doing cardio and stuff like that, I was thinking about getting into Yoga to try to maintain my health as I'm not exactly trying to bulk up or lose up. So how good is Yoga for maintaining a good level of health and fitness?

You could just browse /fit/ all day with a bag of chips. More or less the same result, and definitely cheaper than yoga classes.

if your goal is to neither gain nor lose weight, then i don't see a problem with yoga. there are varying claims on how flexible it makes you, but certainly won't decrease your flexibility. it's also relaxing.

yoga helps you stay relaxed and flexible

you dont gain control//mobility of that flexibility.
you dont gain any appreaciable strength
you dont gain and endurance

i would consider yoga a prehab/supplemental workout. not a centerpeice to a healthy lifestyle

Some of the yoga poses are hard work. This coming from someone who does lots of bodyweight work (can do a tuck planche) in addition to weight lifting.

Manipulating your own Body weight can't possibly be exercise, nor could using smaller muscle groups that weight lifting can leave out -- therefore, /fit/ disapproves. But seriously, nothing wrong with yoga.

cunning post is cunning

as for yoga, go for it. also if you do a class, depending on where you go you get to stare at lithe women contorting their bodies for an hour or so... beats watching dudes lift

Yoga's okay. You don't even need to waste money on classes, just look up postures on the Internets.

Sounds like you've never done a yoga pose in your life

I really want to try the pose in the OPs pic but my arms are sore and I'm exhausted.

Do I do it anyways?

Yea, you totally should start with that pose, all of Yoga is incredibly easy.

I've done yoga before... it's just been a while. Plus I'm pretty damn flexible.

there are actually some things you can do with yoga where you can burn ~500 cals in about an hour
you have to be like a super awesome master though
most classes i've been to have been shit that isn't even NEAR that, but if you can find a good teacher that can kick your ass, go for it.
but supplement yoga to a standard cardio/weight training regimen.

Yoga is more balance and flexibility so it wont really replace a cardio workout. Plus ever since I've done yoga i've yet to pulled anything.

quick question for ppl in this thread
i was thinking of taking it up for balance/flexibility, but i read that static stretching, which yoga is i think, can actually decrease performance in other things like running. :S wiki tells me stretching is actually bad for you lol. >:3

so basically, have you guys noticed any improvements in other areas after doing yoga or are you just better at yoga?

She's sure hot.

So you can't run, so what? Seriously, how often do you NEED to run?

Yoga will give you great cardio from the higher energy workouts (like iyengar) and it's full of hot chicks who can fold like pretzels.

yeh cause i like running, and it's my cardio
so i don't really want to do yoga for that, although the hot flexi girls are a definate bonus
basically i don't want it to fuck with my current cardio / weight program, but i'd like to gain some flexibility
