Well, I would guess do a lot of lap swimming. I heard butterfly is the best for your body, but I always liked doing freestyle a lot more. When you get in the pool, do some warm up laps (maybe a 50-100 all kicking, another with only using your arms, another with the right arm only, another with the left arm) and try to work on breathing exercises (swim at the bottom of the pool and practice holding your breath until you can do 25 yd without surfacing).
That's what I do when I lap swim. Then it's just doing a lot of 100's and 200's, maybe throw in a 500, breaking it up occasionally with a 25 yd underwater entirely and then a 25 yard sprint.
Don't know if that helps, but it'd probably help to swim with someone to help pace you.
