/fit/, what am I doing wrong?

From the start of this school year I've been trying to get in shape. Just 5-10 pounds lost would be great, anything, but I've been going nowhere. Haven't lost any inches, haven't lost any weight, don't look any better.

I go running 5-6 days a week for 40 minutes and do strength training 2-3 days a week (calisthenics/light hand weights, since I just want to lose some fat). I also spend at least an hour walking every day. I eat about 1400 calories a day (I'm only 5'2, so it's not like that's not enough) and track everything I eat--I eat healthy foods, nothing super processed, no high fructose corn syrup, no fast food, no junk/snack foods, and I only drink water.

months of this and no progress, and I still look like ass. I've tried mixing up my exercise routine with different kinds of cardio, but that hasn't helped either. What can I do to actually be successful in losing some fat? I feel like I'm wasting all my time and energy for nothing, and it SUCKS.

I want to falcon punch your ass for that.

Post your your general exercise rountine and an example of what you eat (don't be general if you're only eating 1400 caloires it shouldn't take long to post). Also post everything you do in your exercise rountine. Include specifics.

you're obviously not telling the truth

Just because you're short doesn't mean you need to eat less calories dude. You're a male, you need to eat a minimum of 1500 cals SEDENTARY. When you're exercising that much you need to be eating way more than that to fuel your godamn body. Think about it logically.

Take stimulants. For most people this means coffee or coke but feel free to try something more drastic.

You are eating way, WAY too few calories. Your body is in starvation mode and is thus very reluctant to burn fat. I would say with your activity level you should bumb it up to around 2300 a day for optimal fat loss.

Never, EVER eat less than 1800 calories a day. Doing so would be counter-productive to any fat loss.

That's misleading. For example you burn more calories sleeping than watching tv. If he wasn't eating enough calories he'd be losing weight. I might eat 1000 calories a day and I'm perfect weight for my height.

Lift fallen timber.

The more you fucking starve yourself on only 1400 fucking calories, the more like your body is going to get into starvation mode, where it saves up ALL THAT DAMN FAT YOU'RE TRYING TO LOSE!

The human body doesn't like changing it's weight. It will do everything in it's power to stay at a constant weight. If you cut your calories too drastically, your body will respond by drastically lowering your metabolism. Thus you will still have a balanced energy intake and you won't lose weight. Because of this, you can have an insufficient calorie intake and stay at a regular body composition.

And that's just plain wrong.

when I used to eat only 1000 calories and exercised, I lost a gang of weight

That wasn't fat you were losing.

Well, my body appearance said otherwise

27522 here. I'm 5'11. My weight peaked at 152 lbs around 14-15 years old playing competitive soccer. I stopped when I was 16 thinking it would interfere with employment and basically haven't done regular exercise in the last 10 years. I ate fast food every day at lunch for 5 years, only drank coke and ate at most one other meal. When I stopped drinking coke I lost 10 lbs in a week, down to 135 lbs (low healthy range)and struggled to get that back. Now that I don't eat fast food or drink coke I have basically no source of calories. Everything nowadays is marketed at fat people in 100 calorie segments. I started working out trying to get to 170 lbs to prove it's negligably different in appearance from 150, but I've been stuck at 152 for 6 weeks.

Oh shit nigga, thread hijack in the process. Oooohhhhhh!

Lift heavier if you can. If you're not training the whole body you're doing nothing to put on weight. Biceps curls are working a muscle that if you're lucky weighs two fucking pounds. Train deadlifts, squats if you have the flexibility, fullbody lifts. The clean and press for example, if you can learn the form of the lift. It takes practice which is why most people don't do it. Check out crossfit.com for more info on olympic style lifts. Stay away from "isolation" or "single-joint" exercises and lift heavy so your body gets scared into hypertrophy.

OP here, example of food for a day:

breakfast- english muffin with cream cheese and a bowl of oatmeal
snack- kashi granola bar
lunch- tuna sandwich and banana
snack- yogurt
dinner- pasta with vegetables and some applesauce or something.

really doesn't look like a lot when I put it that way... I'll post my workout routine once I'm not feeling braindead.

I don't want to sound like a carbcunt but you are eating a lot of starchycarbygrainy stuff. Eat more meat (steakums are good) and less grain and see how it affects your energy levels when you run and just generally throughout the day. Eat a majority of your carbs in the evening if you can, they make you want to sleep.

You're also eating yogurt which is full of sugar (it's natural so atleast that is good). I am just pointing out possibilities, so experiment with what you like and if it works then neat (I doubt a yogurt cup is going to be the source but hey).

Hard-boiled eggs or just the whites are good sources of protein, too. You shouldn't be afraid of natural fats. I really think you need more meat (read: protein) and would benefit from lifting weights (not like a bodybuilder, like an athlete) but I will reserve that for the exercise routine post.

Also, on top of this, lifting heavy weights will boost your metabolism, and not make you look like an annorexic stick-insect when your body finally starts shifting that weight!

OP here. I don't eat meat except for fish and eggs, so that's probably part of why I don't have a lot of protein.

I unfortunately don't have the time or money to go to a gym, especially to make an ass out of myself in front of dudes that are all like 100x in better shape than I am. My original thinking was that it would be better to try to lose the fat before putting on any muscle, so I wouldn't still look like someone fat, just with muscle under the fat. Obviously I'm incompetent enough that I can't even take on one thing at a time and do it successfully.

For cardio, I either run (outside) for 40 minutes or jog for 20 and do intervals for 20.

for non-cardio, I use a set of 15lb weights.
3 sets of 8 of bicep curls, tricep kickbacks, rows, shoulder presses, and front raises.
50 squats, 50 pushups, 20 bridges, 20 leg lifts, 20 bicycle crunches, and 20 side crunches on each side.

Falcon punch away, as I'm sure I fail miserably, but at least I've been trying to do something.

protip: they probably wont care if you're a weak or fat-ass. if anything they might show you respect. i'm pretty weak at the moment (just started weight training), but a lot of the stronger chaps at the gym are actually quite talkative.
And if you're doing it for yourself, why should you give a fuck what everyone else thinks? i don't.

I'm sure your school has a gym. I'm sure there is a coach who will let you in a couple of times during the week. You can probably just walk right in and get a good 20min workout right after school.

Is a hundred percent correct. DO NOT go all emo on us now OP, you cunt. I look like a fucking cancer survivor and worked out with someone forty pounds heavier than me. We lifted around the same weights and I especially got respect from a dude who benched 350 because I wouldn't give up on sets that I could keep going on. Like today, I was reluctant to go to this new gym but I went, there were sexy ladies eying my goodies but I ran, did my shit, and left. People who are out doing stuff don't have time to care about you (Not to sound cruel).

Often time people will be willing to share their hobbies with you when you need help and they are there when you fail because they have been there. It is a process and even genetic freaks had to start somewhere. Onlookers can (not will) be cruel but if you find someone and ask they will probably guide you with how they started. Honestly, you're not representing olympic weight lifters or the SAS; you only have your own fucking goals to live up to. All the failure and GLORY is yours.

I can't run for forty minutes, that is fucking impressive. Most guys in the gym can't run that much. So, there's your angry compliment of the day. Do handstand pushups, get a pullup bar, do pistols or go get an olympic weight set, a big rock, or lift a sibling. Just take that portion up a notch, eat lots of fucking cows and keep with the running.
