I had one done last year, and it was rather simple (though wierd to watch happen). They just drill down to the core on the tooth of interest (after well numbing the site) stuff some rubber filler in, melt it, burst it down into the abscess with some forceful pressure, and then cap like a regular filling. Nothing to it.
So brush and use restoring fluoride containing mouthwash and you can hold things as they are, but if you've got an abscess, just man up and take the canal.
