Hey /fit/,

So right now I'd consider myself pretty fit and at the moment I'm trying to bulk up. Now I know that it's impossible to gain muscle and lose weight at the same time, but I'm somewhat confused in the context that this fact is in. Does it mean that you should try to lose weight if you're trying to gain weight in general? Or does it mean that there aren't exercises that can burn fat and tear muscle fibers at the same time?

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I just want to clear out this misconception. The reason I ask this is because I do HIIT on days that I don't lift, so I'm wondering if I shouldn't be doing any HIIT until I hit the cutting phase. Thanks.

When insulin is in the bloodstream, fat burning stops and storage of fats and proteins begins. At any one time, a person is either catabolic or anabolic, so yes, it is impossible.

It's possible to be catabolic for a few days and then anabolic, though. It doesn't work as well as straight bulking and cutting, but it can give the appearance that muscle is being gained during fat loss.

If you're working out hard and eating a calorie deficit your body will simply burn fat for the energy to build muscle.

Way too optimistic. The body, in reality, never uses fat that way. The rare few people who gain muscle while dieting are spending at least a few days outside caloric deficit each week.

Cardiovascular health is its own reward, plus it makes it easier to change into fat loss mode later on if you aren't a panting blob. As long as you are eating above energy requirements, you will be anabolic.
