I'm an okay weight for my height and age, but I'm pretty out of shape. Soo, I decided to use the eliptical machine we have at our house everyday. However, the two times I've been on it, I was kind of bummed out. First, I couldn't even get a mile (only .85 mi) in 15 minutes! I knew I was out of shape, but that seemed reallly crappy, especially because a few months back I think I was able to get a mile in about 10 mintes. Then, this time, in 10 minutes, I only got .57 mi. An ideal time for running a mile, I've heard, is 10 minutes, so I feel pretty bad. I talked to my sister and she said elipticals and running have different times, which makes sense. But neither one of us know what the "conversion" is. So, my question is:
What's the normal time for a mile on a eliptical?
And what's a beneficial amount of time (minutes) to spend on it per day.
Thanks.

What is an ideal time then? Maybe it's 7...?

I would say somewhere around there..I am not in perfect shape my self but I run a mile in a little under 8 minutes. I know some people on here can run it in a little over 6 minutes. I wouldn't strain yourself though, go at your own pace, you are working out to get healthier not to compete in a mile run.

Okay, I'm just curious now as to if 15 minutes on an eliptical would translate to less on a treadmill. It wouldn't be down as far as 7 minutes, but still.

No, I'm just not a very active person. I'm trying to change that though, which is why I'm here. :)
