Protein is just a macronutrient like lipids and carbohydrates. They provide energy, 4kcal/g to be exact. Eating plenty of protein is necessary to grow and stay strong, and if a sufficient amount is taken with a regular weight lifting program, it can grow larger muscles, which is why you may see someone drinking protein after a work out.
