You must get this kind of thread all the time, /fit/, but dammit I know you guys can give me some good advice.

I'm in my senior year of High School, and I'm planning on becoming a director in the future. This year, I was able to take extra art electives by dropping P.E., which isn't a big loss because our P.E. class sucks. However, I am now enrolled in Independent Fitness, which basically means I have to meet certain goals and work out on my own time. I thought this would be perfect for me, because I am not fit, and I'd like to at least lose my gut. I'm 5'10 at 230 odd pounds, so I'm definitely packing extra. Problem is, I haven't the foggiest on what to actually do. I live too far away from a gym to justify the gas to get out to one regularly, and I live in the rainy part of Washington (all of it) so everyday outdoor jogs around my land aren't viable either. What's a good plan for me? My food intake isn't great, but I'm hardly a pig. I'm a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy (British raised) but I don't eat that much, and I could live with losing soda during the week or something.

Any advice is much appreciated, and I'll be lurking if any questions are asked.

DO SOME FUCKING SQUATZ

OP here. What ARE squatz, exactly? Are they any different from the generic sit-ups they force you to do in school?

Are you kidding me? At least if you run in the rain you won't be sucking down as much smog and it's a great way to lose weight and build cardiovascular health

This coming from a lifelong Washingtonian <3

Also

Eat more veggies? Potatoes kind of seem like empty calories if you eat them ALL the time

Excuse me if I've never been to /fit/ before.

Thanks for the legitimate response; I was sort of joking about running in the rain. I live on 6 acres of hilly land, and my driveway is a half-mile road. My exercise routine at the moment is to walk down and jog up the steep part closest to my house for about half an hour.

As for my diet, I'm really not sure what to do. I know I should eat a bigger variety of things, but I'm sort of stuck. I've just grown up on really basic stuff, so switching to maximum veggies just seems a little... hard for me. It's purely psychological, I'm a total faggot.

Well, there's your problem.

Then don't do max veggies. Just slip them in instead of other stuff occasionally. Like, I dunno, instead of a candy bar have like a banana or something? Or instead of two helpings of meat or whatever, have one and a salad.

>>353488
Oh, fruit isn't a problem for me. Basically, my snacking habits consist of either tortilla chips or a banana, apple, tangerine, etc. That I can do.

Basically, I want to take this independent PE course as an excuse to lose a little extra weight. I don't want abs, I don't want a rock hard ass. Basically, I just want to prevent man-tits.

>I'm a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy

WHY THE FUCKING FUCK HAS NO ONE IN THIS THREAD POINTED IT OUT TO HIM THAT HE SHOULD NOT EAT POTATOES? FUCK.

Basically, stop eating:

-starches (potatoes, corn ,etc)

-processed shit (e.g.: white bread, pasta, most junk food, most baked stuff)

-sugary shit (soda, most baked shit, most junk food, fruit (Actually, don't not eat fruit, but only eat fruit when you are going to be doing something physical, so you can put the energy to good use.), etc)

-stuff with lots of fat (derp)

In place of those shitty carbs, eat whole grains stuff (e.g. OATZ)

Also, do you eat breakfast every day? If you don't, EAT SOME FUCKING BREAKFAST (I mean FUCK, think of it like this: YOU'VE BEEN 8+ HOURS WITHOUT FOOD!), it fucks up your metabolism if you don't. You should always eat, just don't eat too much and don't eat shitty foods. Also, don't eat stuff (especially carbs) before going to bed, because it will all get converted to fat while you sleep.

Lifting weights is good, because:
1. It boosts your metabolism.
2. Muscles take energy to keep, which means more energy will go to your muscles, instead of getting stored as fat.
3. You'll be stronger. (Nothing to do with losing weight, but it's still good.)

If you do decide to lift, keep in mind that if you aren't gaining as much as you like, that some of it might be muscles. (Muscle weighs more than fat.) You should use the mirror to guage your progress, rather than the scale.

Ah, THANK you, an actual response! I actually sometimes skip breakfast - I know I shouldn't so that's the routine I'll probably get into again first. I usually have an oats-and-granola bar. Can you suggest some good foods/meals I can start eating instead of the stuff I shouldn't? Drinks as well, I usually have like... one Coke a day (that can go), lots of apple/orange juice, and Propel. I also carry a water bottle at school and work.

Tortilla chips are fine if they're like this: http://foodshouldtastegood.com/portfolio_multigrain.asp

Most others are absolute shit though. Basic corn ones are terrible. Only eat the chips with some decent salsa, or if you need some good fats, you could go with guacamole.

NO JUICE OR SODA EVER. JUICE IS AWFUL AND SODA IS WORSE.
>> Anonymous
>>353402
Juice? Seriously? Like not even organic orange juice? Fuck man, what are you going to tell him next, that he has to climb Mt. Fucking Doom and throw the ring into the fire? What the fuck is wrong with a glass of OJ or a soda every now and then?
>> Anonymous
>>353555

Just drink water, it's cheap/free and has nothing fattening in it. Juice has almost as much sugar as soda, and it doesn't have the fibre and many other things that are in whole fruit. If you ARE going to have sugar, make sure it's whole and natural (fruit, but NOT juice) and try to do it before physical activity. (e.g. sports, working out, running, etc) (so you can burn it off.) It might just be better to avoid most sugar, though, depending on how active you are.
>> Anonymous
>>353571
Juice is a sugar nuke, you should know that and OP should too.
>> Anonymous
>>353571

Juice is like fruit, which is almost completely sugar, except you process it and take out all the good stuff.

Drink some fucking water (or milk if you're bulking), faggot.
>> Anonymous
>>353600
OP here. So... fruit = yes, juice = no? I can deal with that, I guess; it's not like I don't like drinking water or anything. What about flavored stuff like Propel? I'm assuming that's a no, but I generally drink that when I'm jogging.

WATERWATERWATERWATER

JUST FUCKING DRINK IT

STOP TRYING TO ADD FLAVOR

FLAVOR IS FOR THE WEAK

JUST FUCKING DRINK THE WATER
>> Anonymous
>>353612
Don't bother with Propel unless you really really like it. I mean, if you really really liked chocolate cake you could work that into your diet and still lose weight if you plan it right. Personally I think Propel tastes bad so I wouldn't drink it either way, but I don't see any advantage it has over water.

Also skim milk is fine for cutting especially when starting out, but maybe only two cups a day max. Shit is a great source of protein.
>> Anonymous
>>353642
Skim as in nonfat milk? Sounds good, I like that stuff anyway. So far, then:

1. No more soda
2. No more sugar in general, except fruit
3. WATERWATERWATER
4. Eat less starch/carbs

Seems ok, /fit/. Just a question, how religious do you think I need to stick to this? Like if I'm hanging out with friends, is it ok to have a slice or two of pizza or a Coke or something? Or should I just go completely cold turkey 24/7?
>> Anonymous
>>353642
Dude I want in on that chocolate cake diet. Also I'm fairly sure he's ok with Propel, as long as he drinks it before/during exercise.

The fat isn't so much the problem in milk, it's the lactose (sugar).

per (1cup? I forgot, not gonna go check the label.)

5g fat (2.5 for skim, 10 for whole/homo)
9g protein
11g sugar
