How many of the /fit/izens box? I'm thinking about taking it up at a local gym to get in shape, meet some new people, learn to defend myself, etc. What are some of the pros/cons to this? I've heard professionals get their hands pretty fucked up after a good career but that's to be expected. But as far as a sport to teach discipline and self confidence how is it?

Also no talk about any sort of MMA, I'm not a big fan of the image it has. It's just a bunch of 'tough guy's that practice it so they can fuck people up on the weekends and talk shit.

good way to get in shape, you'll be able to beat down most thugs in a few weeks, expect your knuckles to be callused, the experienced fighters in the gym will be using you as a punching bag in the beginning.

boxing is a great sport to get into, ive only been in two months and as>>470451says you will be used as a punching bag for awhile. BUT do not give up the chance to spar with the veterans because they know alot more than you do, just try and learn as much as you can when you spar them.
