Pro: Cheap, Doesn't require a lot of space.
Con: You can't go around braging about squatting 500lbs.
>> Anonymous
>>316563
Expensive for what they are, dumbells are better for many exercise, But kettle bell snatch and clean are both good and build forearm toughness (major bruising you'll get) and strength.
>>316580
>Cheap
haha no. for a few of these things you can get a fully loaded barbell.
>> Anonymous
>>316583

you can get a 1.5 pood girya for <80$. If you have one, that's about it, you don't need more equipment.

...as paperweights and use olympic barbells for proper weight training.
>> Anonymous
>>316627

Hell no, it's just a different form of training. You won't get to become a body builder with them, but as a supplement training for a fighter or training useful strength, nothing beats giryas.

you mean conditioning and GPP. Yes it is true many people don't have that in their program due to Stronglifts blinding them. But crossfit>kettlebells the butthurt Russkies claim UR USIN EM WRONG but honestly tabata thrusters are superior for all around aerobic and anabolic conditioning
>> Anonymous
>>316766

Get em from Russia,

1 pood giryas cost ~30$
1.5 pood goes for ~45$
2 pood ones go for ~60%

Not really, an actual Russian military girya training routine for conditioning > cross fit.

Prefer Barbell workout myself, lift heaver weight and you can change it ever workout, but with them your stuck on the same weight till you buy another one and the only way to get stronger would to start doing it longer

Pros: they are awesome; they can get your heart rate up faster than damn near anything, they are versatile, chick dig the shit out of them for some reason when you train with them

Cons: training outside gets a lot of odd looks and random strangers stopping to ask what the fuck is going on; people assume that because you are only moving 16/24/32 kg, the drill are easy; large jumps in weight
>> Anonymous
I have a 16, 24, and 32 kg. They are great for conditioning and muscle endurance (I fight, shoot, and kill people)

Not really useful for the BB crowd, but if you are a combat athlete, military, leo, etc... I'd check it out.

And don't do crossfit, please.

what are kettlebells like for hypertrophy?
>> Anonymous
i use mine mostly for farmer's carries, turkish get-ups (helps with my aching shoulder), and presses while suspended on a glute-ham developer

not too much into the swinging
>> Anonymous
kettle bells are easy to lose control of when you're not used to them. swinging them around can wrench your shoulder, and if you let go it's going to hulk smash something.
>> Anonymous
>>317420

If you're a reckless idiot, you'll fuck up with any exercise, you can easily kill yourself by bench pressing as an example, lift a 300 BB above your chest and drop it and that's it.

Stretch before and get a kettlebell that you can handle

I got a 25lb (I'm a smallfag, 125lbs 5'7") for about $50, I was dead after about 30 minutes of doing exercises in the booklet it came with.

Then I got some Art of Strength DVDs and they killed me, (14 exercises for 2 minutes straight and 3 minutes of snatches at the end, this is just in one DVD)

Anyways, in about a week (before the DVDs), I went from a 20lb dumbbell being heavy to a 25lb kettlebell feeling like nothing
>> Anonymous
OP of>>317443
Only thing I don't like about them are getting blisters and callouses and the friction on the forearm (left me with two cuts) when doing snatches and cleans
>> Anonymous
>>317454
chalk up
>> Anonymous
>>317443

Wow, I didn't even know that they make giryas at 25lbs...
>> Anonymous
>>317457
they make them as low as 8lbs

if you've never used kettlebells before 20lbs is a good place to start. most people i've had try kettlebells and try suspended presses can't even handle 20lbs after 2 reps before their core gives out and they go flailing.
>> Anonymous
>>317457
I've seen them at 8lbs in some stretching videos and 10lbs at stores
>> Anonymous
When I started doing swings, my lower back started to hurt after about 45 total.

Do you guys think it is due to bad posture or just muscle being build-up?
>> Anonymous
>>317477
keep your chest up the entire time as high as you can, try to keep a good neutral back

i always am fascinated by people talking about kettlebells INSTANTLY turns into 'how to train' w/KBs, which (altho u dont realize it) is as much kool-aid drinking as the blinded stronglift/crossfitters.

you can do ANYTHING w/any of these fitness implements.

altho yes, the KB crowd has a hard on for anaerobic/aerobic threshold training. (ie. 50 snatches per arm, switch).

Pavel isnt god on this subject, neither are the RKCs AKCs. (altho based on my interaction w/both groups, i like the AKCs a bit better, as they see the KB as just a TOOL IN THE TOOLBOX, not the be all end all sales pitch)

just my outstanding, overly informed opinion

stronglifts-->madcow-->pendlay-->starting strength--->BILL STARR -->(arguably also from the 50s/60s oly lifters)
