EVERYTHING is shallow, we are all doing things for our own benefit in some way, dont get it twisted.
the difference in our society is that its not intrinsically necessary to work out to survive (as compared to other societies where being fit came as a byproduct of surviving) however there are more subtle, deeper social reasons to work out ranging for sex apeal to fighting capabilities, all of which are egocentric.
however there is nothing wrong with being egocentric, after all, you are you and you should care about yourself. do things for yourself and so on. the main point is in balancing your actions to cause favorable actions to come about, which is still egocentric, but is the "best" option in my mind. balancing self interest and service to others has been the basis of all social species since they came about.
