Alright /fit/, I'm trying to get in shape. Basically, I'm a heavy-set guy(hueg calves, thighs, ect), but thankfully I don't have too much of a gut. My main problem is my manboobs. Should I focus on cardio to try to slim down, or weights to bulk up? I'm not looking to be a body builder, I'm just curious which way is going to get rid of my manboobs quicker.

Definitely try and slim down first. I was a little chubby before, then I dropped 30 lbs. After that I looked a ton better, and then started to put on muscle. You have to slim down before you put on muscle.

What would be a reasonable goal for a six-foot guy starting at around 215?

no you don't.

best way to get rid of fat is to build more muscle.
work your whole body including legs (they are the biggest muscle)
muscle burns fat...

focus on the cardio, but do some gradual weightlifting a tthe same time. You dont want to look like a twig when you lose all your weight do you?

i lost about 60 lbs in around 3 months (1 semester) i did cardio and weight lifting equally around an hour and a half a day lifting, and an hour of cardio a day. i'd lift 5 days a week and run 6 days a week.

are you the op? if so, wtf? You know what you are doing. If you still have boobs then just keep at it. Intensify your weightlifting to get bigger...but keep the cardio up

not OP, but i think focusing so heavily on cardio will cause muscle loss that could be prevented.

You're a fucking retard too. You lost 60 pounds of mixed mass - muscle and fat.

muscle burns a negligible amount of calories compared to body fat.

I'm tired of fat people trying act like they're muscular in an attempt to avoid hard work.

Is it just me, or does this post not make any sense?

Since when does fat burn calories?

It's not just you, it doesn't make any sense to me either.

The quickest way to burn off fat is cardio. Weight lifting burns calories but what most of these people in this thread don't realize, is that weight lifting only becomes an effective fat loss method once you get up to a semi-pro/pro level of lifting. And I seriously doubt the OP is going to start out anywhere near that.

The best bet is to do lots of cardio to burn that fat off, and do some decent weight lifting to maintain some of that muscle. Also you should probably look into changing your diet a bit.

Muscle loss will happen with weight loss regardless.

what he meant was:

muscle burns a negligible amount of calories compared to how much body fat it burns.

Which is incorrect.

There is no way in hell that you can weightlift and target burning fat. You wont make any gains and will feel week. The long repetitious workout you do for cardio is THE way to burn calories and dig into your fat stores.

no, I meant what I said the first time.

muscle burns 5 calories per pound of muscle. fat burns 2 calories per pound of fat. both are daily base metabolic rates.

if you're 10 pounds overweight, you'll burn 20 calories a day. if you have 10 pounds of muscle instead, you'll be burning 50 calories a day.

That's only a 30 calories difference for such a large fat/muscle differential. You'll unlikely be gainign 10 pounds of muscle anytime soon, and you'll actually be burning more calories being a fatass.

Having more muscle is beneficial, but burning extra calories indirectly isn't the reason.
