Just so you (and anyone else who sees this) know, there's alot of other shit that can cause knee problems for runners.
I had pretty chronic knee pain in one leg, which I found out was Illiotibial band syndrome. A few weeks off, and some liberal stretching of the hips did the trick.
running on uneven surfaces can cause knee pain, especially since alot of roads and sidewalks are ever so slightly slanted to facilitate drainage, running with crappy shoes, and bad form can also add to it.

Whether you're going 5 miles or 10 miles, as long as you're walking, it's not really excessive; but you'll probably get really fucking bored and give up after a few days or weeks. You'd be alot better off by walking, and eventually working your way up to jogging/running shorter distances.
Walking 10 miles a day would be boring as fuck, and pretty unrewarding in terms of actual fitness and appearance. If you could give more detail as to WHY you want to do this (weight loss, get in shape, just starting to work out), you can probably get a much better answer.
