So I tried HIIT earlier.

What the fuck. More like sprint 30sec, stumble around gasping for air for a minute, sprint 30sec, fall over dead.

Am I doing it wrong? I run ~1.5mi 3 times a week, so I didn't expect to get tired so OMFGFAST. Also, as I'm easing into it, is it okay to, say... sprint 30 sec, jog 1 min?

Pic probably unrelated.

Tabata protocol calls for 20 secs. on and 10 off; for 4 minutes.

Yeah, you can ramp up to it. I can only do real Tabatas on a bike. When running, I just sprint as hard as I can and then walk for a bit, then jog and then sprint. Repeat 'til I'm far from home. The hard part is getting used to sprinting; focus on that.

I haven't tried HIIT yet but I imagine when I do this is what will happen, albeit probably even more severely. I guess it's just something you have to work yourself up to over time.

So in the beginning, just sprint until I feel like I can't then jog until I feel like I can sprint sounds good?

I tried it for the first time yesterday on the bike and could only manage 3 sprints before I had to stop because my legs were FUCKING BURNING. I guess I don't nearly have the muscle endurance I thought I did. Only got slightly out of breath though, but I suspect that's the bike's fault. I'm going to try it on the eliptical tomorrow.
