I would first suggest cardio. Having good endurance would probably improve your overall conditioning. If you're into swimming at all, I would definitely go for that. It hits a lot of muscles at once and you can work as much or as little as you want.
I don't really see a line between conditioning for overall health and muscle mass. In exercising, you will be generating muscle. You'll just be doing less weight than others if you're starting out. Anyway, keep a record of what exercises you do and test out what your limits are. Generally, you would want to be doing 3 sets of 10 reps of a particular weight. If you're overexerting yourself for that, then you're pushing too much weight.
