Hey /fit/ is it possible to bulk up muscle wise and still be fast at running (by fast I mean running sub 6:30s for workouts)?

I'm a longtime runner and have just recently started to hit the weight room. I want to keep my speed, but I need more upper body strength and wouldn't mind having a little bit more upper body bulk either. Are the two compatible?

Yes, it's not like gains will suddenly hinder you, it's a slow process.

Body builders beat olympic runners in the 50m dash because they have hueg muscles. Unfortunately they die off after that and 50m isn't an actual event. true story i heard it from a friend of a friend

Well, bodybuilders wont, they aren't made for going fast.

Olympic lifters have been tested against sprinters, and their 20m is generally faster. They lose after that for a bunch of reasons, but they are more explosive.

Find a good coach to teach you olympic lifting and train hard. Although you might have to cut down the distance running a bit. The most I ever run is a 5k

I don't run as much as you, but I am a cross country runner and distance runner in track at my school. I only started last season (18, in b4 underaged b&) and had a PR of 19:36. I ran winter off seasons, but only 3-4 days of the week. Did track, and did summer off-season after that. Over the summer, I would only run 3-4 days a week and not even 5 miles a day, but I also did the stronglifts 5x5. I didn't gain pretty much bulkwise, but I did get a fair amount stronger, and when this CC season started, I was already doing a 5k under 20 at less than race pace. I ended with a PR at 17:48

I think, to and extent, they can be compatible, but there will probably come a point where it will either be lifting or running that will predominate.
