Hello /fit/

I've recently just started becoming more healthy with eating andd exercise. I have never been to a gym before except for today when I went into to sign up. I am officially signed up now but I am just wondering if there is anything I should know? I am 18 144 lbs 5'9.
Any tips for me? A new gym member? I dont really have anyone to come work out with me (just because my friends dont go to the gym or they go to LA fitness, I signed up at 24 Hour fitness because it was closer to my house.) I have no knowledge in using the equipment and stuff and I dont know what I should do first.

first step: don't

You'll be wasting a lot of time if you just walk into a gym with no idea what you're doing. Research lifting programs and pick one that fits your needs (generally TBT 5x5 kind of stuff will be best for beginners). Research training nutrition and plan how you should eat to reach your goals.

I see people at my gym that have been there for a while and made almost no gains (strength, size, anything) because they just go into the gym and do whatever they feel like doing without understanding how to reach their goals.
