Hey /fit/

I'm a guy of average fitness training to join the royal marines in about 2 years. Their website recommends doing 30-40 minute runs in the morning and circuit training in the afternoons (http://www.royalmarines.mod.uk/training-tool.html), how effective is this workout?

Here's the training course that I will be doing once I've applied: http://www.royalmarines.mod.uk/server/show/nav.6941 the physical side of the course involves a lot of running long distances (up to 30 miles) with heavy equipment.

How effective is the training program that the Royal Marines recommend for training in preparation for becoming a Royal Marine...?

If you know exactly what you're going to be doing, then the best thing you can do is train for it. It's the military, so you're going to be doing medium distance running (2-10 miles), calisthenics, and long distance marches.

I don't know where you got the 30 mile figure from, no military organization is ever going to get you to run 30 miles with a pack on, because no one would finish.

The only things you really need to focus on are upper body calisthenics and running, or depending on what you want your specialty to be, possibly swimming.

Read the site. All royal marines do a 30-mile run in full webbing with rifle.

So basically, running, running and more running?

It really isn't a run. You do 30 mile treks with full gear, not runs.

It's 1 mile brisk walk, 1 mile jog, and 1 mile run. They keep repeating until 30 miles is up.

Im going through the application process atm, and the circuit isnt challenging enough. It's a great starter though and got me into a routine.

Just make sure you run a variety of runs at various paces, get you 1.5mile (2.4km) down to at max 9 minutes, your 3 miler to under 18-20minutes etc and you will be fine.

Stick some longer runs in too, as prmc is VERY demanding on cardio, it's more intense than start of recruit training.

Don;t worry about looking at the 30 miler or anything like that, the PJFT (1.5 mile treadmil) and PRMC (3 day of tests) are what you need to concentrate on, especially the cardio.

It's rock climbing and abseiling and shit.

Thanks for the advice. What kind of exercises should I focus most on being good at? Pushups, pull-ups, sit-ups?

For the running, should I just concentrate on doing 20 minute runs every day and trying to improve each time?

Some of the stuff involves jumping off a small cliff into the sea, stuff like mountaineering, Kayaking etc

60 pressups in 2 mins
80 situps in 2 mins
6 overarm grip pullups

Aim for at least 2/3 of each and get to a level where you can do them after a 1.5 mile run right away.

With the running, see how far you can go first of all, but you need to build up to distances, not times. 1.5 20 minute run isnt as useful as a 1.5 10 minute imo.

Forgot to add about correct form:

Pressup: Shoulder width hands, elbows tucked into sides, pivot at ankle as usual.
Situps: Knees together at all times, elbows touch floor when down, touch knees when up
Pullups: over arm grip, no swinging.

So distance > time

Thank you very much for the help, and good luck with the training. Don't give up.

Agreed with this post. You've let off you're underage by stating you're waiting 2 years, which means you're setting a goal for something you may not want to do. And if you don't want to do it, you'll abandon the regime and return to lardassery.

Come back when you're joining in 3-6 months.

...How exactly does it prove I'm underage? I'm 19. I plan on joining when I'm 21. I've wanted to join since I was 15.

Then why wait?

Because I'm going to university first in order to stand a better chance of being accepted for a commission. The admiralty board interview is notoriously tough and a degree will help me impress them. Also, I don't want to be a boy soldier. Also, I'm not at peak physical condition and will find the training difficult.

Is that alright with you?
