Pushups are calisthenics and they cannot replace weight lifting. Calisthenics build muscular endurance while weight lifting builds strength. You cannot substitute one for the other, try to balance them out.
I should know. I bench 160 lbs at 5 sets of 5 reps but when it comes to pushups I do 8 sets of 60 reps with almost no rest in between each set. If I were to throw all my endurance into one set of pushups I max at about 120 reps. I'm an example of someone who focuses more on muscular endurance than strength.
Compare how many pushups I can do even though both you and I bench the same amount. But, yeah, neither substitutes the other. Strike a balance between both, don't be the idiot that benches 300 but can't put out 80 pushups and don't be the idiot that can push out 120 pushups but can't bench more than 200 lbs (me.)
