jumping rope makes my upper back hurt slightly. the pain only lasts as long as i'm jumping. what does this mean? what can i do to counteract this?
i think i might need better shoes?

What's your posture like? What surface are you jumping on? What shoes?

Probably best on a rubber mat with jogging shoes at the least. I don't think they make jump rope specific shoes, but I'd try to match up shoes that are used in sports that require a ton of jumping on the balls of your feet.

"My back hurts" is a pretty meaningless complaint. Is it muscular? Does it radiate from the spine? Where in the upper back is it? Do you hurt when you land, when you spin the rope?

We need more info.

The impact might be causing your spine to rub or pinch the nerves that radiate out from it. Do you notice this pain when you run/work/lift? If you do, talk to your doctor about getting some imaging done of your spine.

Stay away from chiropractors. Some of them are pretty good, but too damn many of them are quacks who will want you to get into Qi Gong and acupuncture and shit.
