How much stretching is too much? Is that even possible? What if one were to spend hours each day just stretching?

i forget what it is but a large percentage of injuries in athlets is due to improper stretching.
im not sure if there is a possibility of over-stretching but what ever you do, take it slow and do it right

you could injure yourself by improper stretching just like you can injure yourself by improper weight lifting or running.

Like if you try to suck your own penis too often and push yourself too far.
Now I can never properly explain to anybody why I have chronic lower back pain.

I usually only do static stretches since that seems to be the safest way to go about it.

stretching is best done after a workout, when your muscles are flushed with blood. also you can over stretch but thats stretching too far, not too often.

also, my fitness teacher(also a chiropractor) has told us about how people who are more flexible generally have a higher life expectancy, and that flexibility is conducive to overall health.

I just did a basic 10-15 stretch routine before working out with the track/cross country team and look at me now! I've always been able to touch my toes, but I was never able to get my head close to my knees until about 2 years of the same stretch routine. The group stretching that gymnasts do will make you flexible in no time. Anyways, back to your questions about stretching: stretching is simply a way to lengthen your muscles. Its not really important to do before a workout (a warm up is sufficient) but after a workout makes sure you don't get that funny 'stuck' position when your muscles start to grow. There's no "too much" but you may want to evaluate your fitness goals before you stretch all day long.

According to Pavel, you're both morons. And I agree.

Dear OP - go read Relax Into Stretch.

You don't need long muscles to be flexible. You need relaxed muscles.

I just want to have a fitness routine that I can do everyday wherever I am. If stretching all the time is useful, then I'll just do that.
