Thoughts on gymnastics/bodyweight training Anonymous
Hey /fit/, I was wondering what type of training routines gymnasts have, and whether anyone here could give an example routine?

If you look at gymnasts, they're pretty strong fuckers - do any of you weight lifters out there think you can do the things they do (i.e. handstands, walking on hands, stuff on the rings, etc)?
Cheers.

Picture unrelated but cool as fuck.

Planches. Google it and train to do one.

You can get a really strong body doing only body weight exercises.
My friend started doing pushups every day since he was 11 or something and when he went to the gym with me once when we were 14 he bench pressed 80 kilos and during high school he was pretty much the strongest.

He wasn't too fit though.

Gymnasts train on rings. The thing is, they train like fuck. Twice or thrice a day isn't uncommon. The good news is, you can incorporate some moves into your daily routines, i.e. buy some compact power-rings and hang them onto a pullup-bar in your house. Each time you pass under the bar do half as many reps as you can with

Dips
Ring-pullups
static holds in the horizontal position (easier said than done)

And in no time you'll be doing human flags and one-handed pullups.

Hooray!

I lift weights and can do a lot of gymnast shit.... it works to a certain level but is not as effective as weights

I float immediately when I submerge in water. How do people do this?

lose the fat, fatty.

breath out as much air as possible

Not the person you're referring to but is fat really that buoyant? Would one of those crane-lifted 1000 lbs fatties float with ease?
>> Anonymous
>>319176
even sludge tankers float.
>> Anonymous
It's the air in your lungs that makes you buoyant. If you breathe out before submerging, you can lie on the floor if you wanted to.

This was already discussed yesterday at this thread:>>317394

and bodyweight only fags got bodyslammed.

Stop posting this shit, seriously. You will never be a gymnast.

Inhale as much water as plausible.

doubt many strict weight lifters can do a muscle up or skin the cat on rings because they don't have the necessary flexibility
>> Anonymous
>>319218
I doubt many bodyweightfags can deadlift 500 pounds for reps because they don't have the necessary strength. What is your point?
>> Anonymous
>>319221
i have no point, he asked a question and i answered it truthfully, not my problem if you disagree now is it
>> Anonymous
>>319221
But deadlifting that much weight is almost completely useless.

Muscle ups can come in handy.

TO EACH HIS OWN.

caps lock is cruise control for cool but you still gotta steer

>>319228
It's useless to you. Also, you're completely ignorant about weightlifting and weightlifters. Sure, a powerlifter can POSSIBLY not be flexible (not necessarily). However, Olympic weightlifters are extremely flexible. You just value flexibility over strength. Lifting a heavy weight off the floor is not useless in the least and humans have been doing that since they existed.

>>319238

have you ever tried a muscle up, a lot of people are genetically unable to do them without extensive practice of stretching out the shoulders. the problem is not the pullup or dip part but the transition from pull up to dip. many people cannot achieve this and thus cannot do a muscle up. i'm pretty sure if you asked 10 strict weight lifters to try and do a muscle up all 10 won't be able to do one their first or probably their first 20 tries
>> Anonymous
>>319243
Have you ever tried olympic weightlifting? What is your obsession with muscle-ups? Also, my point, you missed it.
>> Anonymous
HOW DO YOU STRENGTHEN YOUR LEGS FAGS?
>> Anonymous
>>319249

yes i do Olympic weightlifting, why not? it's one of the best exercises for explosiveness, it would be dumb not to. but my point is his question was if weight lifters could do gymnastics and i told him flexibility would be a huge issue. whether or not gymnastic folk can do lifting is irrelevant
>> Anonymous
>>319099
Imo.

A good balance between pure strength training and endurance and flexibility training is best if you want to get a healthy and a fit body.

I value the people who can squat 2x their body weight, have the ability to drop down and give me a hundred push ups AND can do a full leg split far, far much more, then anyone, who can just do a thousand pushups, or squat 3-4 times their body weight.

You'll never be a weightlifter either
>> Anonymous
>>319262
How is it fair to hold weightlifters to the flexibility standards of gymnasts, but state that holding gymnast to weightlifter's pure strength and explosiveness standards is irrelevant. You're extremely biased.
>> Anonymous
>>319271
try harder
>> Anonymous
>>319274

i'm not bias, i don't know if gymnasts are explosvieness or not but i'm leaning towards gymnasts having more power and explosiveness than weight lifters being flexible. i know there's a lot of lifts that require flexibility, overhead squat/turkish get-ups/thrusters to some degree, but most of the lifts don't require substantial flexibility
>> Anonymous
>>319286
That's just debatable. Olympic weightlifting lifts (snatch and clean and jerk) are used by athletes that require explosive power. Flexibility is required for both of these lifts. It's not the amount of flexibility required by gymnasts, and gymnasts DO need explosive power, but you're just getting into irrelevant things that can be debated for eons on here, where none of us have a degree in exercise physiology.

Hi. I'm by no means a professional weightlifter, but I perform a stretch/yoga routine every morning / evening to help my muscle recover. I'd dare to claim that I'm about as flexible as standard gymnasts are, I don't have the balance they do thought, but I'm pretty sure that I can out lift them.

>>319275
You're fine with "you'll never be a gymnast" but you take offense at "you'll never be a weightlifter"?

How the fuck is training to pick up heavy loads in the most anatomically correct way useless?

I hope you get trapped under a rock too heavy for a gymnast to lift.

Pistol squats?
>> Anonymous
>>319427

After a certain point you'll be working on endurance unless you're trying to jump to higher places with one leg.
>> Anonymous
>>319427
You can add resistance, thus making it superior. You lose sir.
>> Anonymous
>>319449
And a problem with that is what exactly? I'm not a BW trainee mind you thought. I reached my goal for SQUATS, which is exactly 200 kilos, now if I'll be doing anything, it's going to be increasing the repetitions.
>> Anonymous
>>319453
The point is that bodyweight only routines fail miserably when it comes to leg strength. If you're lifting weights, don't worry about it, this doesn't apply to you.
>> Anonymous
>>319453
You should do 20rep squats, start at something like 220lb and build up yo!

Not really. Squats, Hindu squats, one legged squats, running squats.

Also, there's the middle area. The grey zone where lifting and bodyweight mix. Weighted vests etc. It's neither entirely both, and that my friends, is where you want to go with bodyweight. To the glorious land of doing bodyweight exercises with a weighted vest or backpack.

I'm a decent lifter (315 bs a2a 400+ dl) and i can do muscleups and a poor man's front lever on rings. i'm not too far off a freestanding handstand.

i still think your better off with weightlifting, specifically olympic lifting. but for the smaller/strong people here: learn a few tricks, impress a girl, you might get laid
>> Anonymous
>>319746
That's just retarded. How is a weighted vest essentially any different from a barbell with plates? You are adding resistance on to your body weight in both cases.
>> Anonymous
Gymnastics coach here, just wanted to point out that all of the top level male gymnasts lift weights
>> Anonymous
Bruce lee's 1200 punch pyramid kicked ass.

Start with 100 unweighted punches, then add pounds of weight until it maxed out around 12 pounds, then back down.
