your'e always told to eat whole, lean meat and fish, so i buy these kipper fillets for lunch today

so im there, merrily entering all my meal plans in on the daily plate, i enter the fish, and the fat ratio on my little pie chart shoots up to half

turns out these oily fuckers have almost as much fat as protien

per 100 - 42g protien, 32g fat

what the hell, how is eating lean fish gonna help me lose fat

No, Carbs do. Also, as long as you maintain some calorie deficit per day, you will lose weight. Whether those calories come from carbs, protein, or fat, you will lose weight as long as there is a defect. However it is wise to "spend" the calories you have on sufficient protein, and a good quantity of healthy fats and good carbs(fiber), lest you become malnourished, or fall into catabolism, or ketosis.
