so what's a good way to tone while still making gains in muscle strength/size? would cutting out general calories (from say, snacking) while maintaining a strength-building workout a good idea? would taking protein bars/shakes be helpful or just counteract any toning?

toning = lower body fat.

yup, but lowering body fat generally involves burning more calories than you take in. unless i'm mistaken, your body will burn fat and muscle when this happens, so i'm wondering how to burn the fat while keeping/increasing the musle and whether taking protein bars/shakes will help.

theoretically you can not gain while toning since toning means less body fat. you gain some muscle you gain some fat, you have to take in more calories than you burn. if you eat right though you can make gains with as little fat as possible gained thus making you look more toned since your muscles are bigger.
