I can take being mocked if there's an honest answer in there somewhere.

I want to learn some kind of martial art. The options I have open to me are Muay Thai, BJJ, Tae Kwon Do and Aikido. Which one would you guys recommend and why?

I'm also a 5'5", 135 lb. girl, if that matters.

tits or gtfo

Depends on goal.

Also, there's an Aikido-fag in here who will promote this shitty art despite there being obvious better alternatives. And that faggot will argue that "five friends will kick you in the face if you grapple."

Martial art to be fit or for self defense?
>> Anonymous
Self defense.

learn wrasslin'

Tae Kwon Do, for the following reasons:

1.) It's easier and less harsh on your body, since you are a little girl

2.) It's probably more popular. More people taking it, more instructors.

3.) It's friendly and even if you tried, you probably can't really get hurt. Whereas in one week, two people in my judo class had to have surgery from judo injuries.

But I've been told it's one of the most useless martial arts there are.

I want to be that little girl.

Kickboxing is pretty rad.

It's true. Do BJJ. Break a dudes arm if he tries to cop a feel.

gun kata.
>> sage Sagey McSagerson
135 = too weak for striking. If those four are the only choices, do BJJ. Of course, if you get over the whole grappling a sweaty guy part.

In reality unless you're super tall TKD is worthless by itself.

judo coz its almost impossible to get hurt

lol she'd have to take him to the ground first

That's fine and dandy, but there's no place to learn it.

You might find BJJ a bit boring the first few lessons, since you will be mostly learning escaping techniques and shit, but when you start free form practice (sparring)
It gets so fucking fun. seriously. also 1 v 1 self defense situations it is one of the best martial skills to have. The fight will end on the ground anyways due to the usual attacks on women are raping incidents which involve submission on the ground which is what BJJ focuses on.
do Tae Kwon Do if you want martial arts training to be a social gathering rather than a workout.
Aikido isn't for self defense. Srsly. It is more of a choreographed dance and you learn katas. Comeon. Katas
Muay Thai is always a good choice and is awesome when you are on your feet. It is serious business and an elbow to face can't be taken lightly. So I think it's your choice since i don't know what you want out of a martial arts class, but i'd go with BJJ or Muay Thai or both so you can combine them. I'd go with BJJ due to the fact that there are other girls practicing it and you won't be so intimidated having to fight only men. Muay Thai also poses a heightened risk of injuries compared to BJJ, But honestly saying. Sexy girls elbowing motherfuckers makes me ejaculate into my undies. no offense. Hope you found this useful

You know, I was dead-set on learning Muay Thai until I realized I'd probably be the only girl in a class for a striking art. Sparring would suck for whoever I got matched up with.
...Also there's the fact that I might get laughed out of the place.

OP is being true to her word, even though there's some quality trollan in here. (cooking, i lol'd.)

I've trained in TKD for around 5 years, got to black belt. I was underage b& for most of that time though, and now that I've stopped I can honestly say it was close to useless for me. It was a great social thing, but even while I was learning, I don't think it made me any better at self defense. Maybe it was just me though.

I've been considering picking up another martial art, and the two that come to mind from striking and grappling are obviously Muay Thai and BJJ respectively.

So pick a style (striking or grappling,)
Then match it to the right discipline.

For you, I'd be more inclined to go with BJJ. I wouldn't expect you to be particularly capable at either, given your gender and stats, but out of the two I think you'd be better off with the whole "joint manipulation / strangulation / choke" deal, rather than the "hit hard with fists / feet / knees / elbows" thing.

Pic related, it's Saber.

Bullshit. We have 3 girls where i do muay thai, and we treat them like we would treat any other student. We don't pull any punches, they don't pull theirs. You'll be suprised at how good fighters women can be. Most newcomers in the gym spar those girls and they can't land a hit on them.

And they aren't butch lesbians, they are fit and good looking girls.

I studied as a child, and at first hated the idea of being paired with a girl for sparring. My mother taught me never to hit a girl, so I'd just block and dodge and generally it would only make the girl madder and she'd go harder. I found I enjoyed it, girls hitting me, and it opened tge door of my young mind to the wonderful world of sado maschocism.

tl;dr do it

martial arts are worthless and expensive, nothing but live sparring can prepare you for a fight, in before 1000 faggots who think they can box or that thai clinch is effective in a real fight- go to jazzercise with the soccer moms.

Who the hell does martial arts so he can go fight people at bars? If you want to defend yourself, buy a gun.

How about doing something for fun?

As someone who's taken Wushu, Karate, WTF TKD (not useless Olympic B.S.), BJJ and Muay Thai, if you're looking for practical self-defense, BJJ and Muay Thai are probably your best bets. Aikido is all about self-defense (it's an entirely defensive martial art) and would come with the advantage of requiring very little physical strength out of you. The fact that you're on the shorter side of average would also be useful (as in BJJ) because you have a lower center of gravity which makes take-downs and not being taken down easier (take it from a guy 2 inches taller than you).

I think Aikido is great; it is an effective form of self-defense and because it is a soft-style, redirection of force martial art you are going to take less legal flak after an altercation, something people don't often consider. However for Aikido to be genuinely useful in a real fight takes a lot of practice and drilling, whereas Muay Thai and BJJ would give you more immediate results.

TKD I do not recommend, as kicking high in real combat unless you are really, really good at it or facing someone who completely doesn't know what they're doing is going to end in your ass being on the ground.

I do aikido and the above is more or less consistent with my experience. Aikido can be useful, but only after you practice A LOT on your own. (Though this is probably true for other MA's.)

BJJ and Muay Thai.

Learn both OP, compared to these options, Aikido and Tae Kwon Do is basically a cardio workout.
>> Anonymous
Aikido or possibly BJJ, depending on the schools in question. If the BJJ club is full of tatoo'd and steroid-addled douchebags like so many of them are, try the Aikido club. If you find nothing but haiku-writing New Age idiots there, try the BJJ place. If both fail, there's always TKD - the lowest common denominator martial art. And TKD girls are seriously hot - it's quite a workout. So there is that. The MT place might be a little rough, but check them out, too. Schools vary tremendously - even more so than arts and traditions do. So ultimately you'll have to decide for yourself.

I had typed up a 3-page essay summarizing my views on the martial arts, but 4 other anons had beaten me to it with succinct, informative, and candid replies.

I'm taking it because, first of all, it'd be nice to know ANY way of defending myself, futile as it might be. Second of all, it looks like a fuck ton of fun and it's something I've always wanted to try (MT/BJJ especially)
