hay gois. i always pick at my hair, and take off what im thinking is dandruff. but the hair always comes off with the "dandruff" i pick off. here's an example. what i want to know is, is this dandruff or some other kind of horrible disease eating away at my scalp?

notice: the white part looks a lot longer than it actually is, the clump of "dandruff" is onlyy at the end. also, there's two hairs lodged into that one white thing.

u are pulling out the hair follicle?

Or it is a hair with white-head junk attached to it

dandruff is flaky dead skin

is this hair from your head? or elsewhere?

well, i usually just pick at my hair till i find white clumps, which i assume are dandruff. but something like this will happen where hair will come out with it. sometimes its on the end, sometimes its in the middle of the hair. don't think its lice since theres no itching.

how often do you wash your hair?

when you wash your hair, do you massage your scalp? if not, you need to.

These things that you are picking at...are they bumps on your skin, like a zit or pimple?

occasionally i'll have one or two pimples on my head, but those are usually near my hairline so im not pickin at those. its kind of weird, they can be at random places on my hair, either my scalp or on my actual hair. another thing i should probably mention is that my hair seems to be falling out more in the shower. but when i switched to pert shampoo instead of head and shoulders, less hair comes out.

to answer your question, i rub my scalp as best i can, my hair is kind of long so its kinda hard to reach.

I dont understand. If there are no bumps on your scalp, then why are you picking you scalp?

I am going to give you some good advice in general. Make sure you wash your scalp when you shower. Massage it with shampoo. If you just wash your hair and not your scalp, your head will stink/clog your pores/make your hair roots greased up...which will make your long hair sit different.

so it might just be grease from not washing my scalp enough? thatd be kinda gross, but my hair usually smells of fresh daisies. my hair's curly so maybe instead of the greases traveling down the hair, they stay stuck at the bottom. watching.. waiting... in the shadows we lie. in the darkness we fall....

think about it. Unless you are rolling in the mud, your hairs arent dirty. What makes them gross if you dont shower for too long are the oils from your skin.

So yes, wash your hair like normal, but wash your scalp too. Your hair/skin will be much healthier.

if you have an oily scalp that you havent been washing, yet you head smells nice, it is the scent of your shampoo masking the stench.

Looks to me like you are picking out the hair from the roots. Those things are supposed to be there, under the skin.

Clip your finger nails and stop picking at your head, wash it and then leave it be unless you are combing it or something.

Also note that hair naturally falls out, on everyone, it just grows fast enough to replace itself, unless you actually notice balding, don't worry about it.

Test for dandruff: get a black sheet or pillow case or something (has to be black) put your head exactly over it, and shake your head lieka crazy person, mess up your hair with your hands, etc.

If there are white flakes all over the object, you have dandruff, if not, you don't.

Buy some shampoo called Nizoral. Its expensive but it really works great. You might have a minor bacterial or fungal infection on your scalp and Nizoral dries it up and heals it quickly.
Never use any shampoo with Zinc Pyrithone or Selenium Sulfide. They just burn the crap out of your scalp then it flakes and itches even more.

Op it sounds like you might have trichotillomania, the compulsive pulling of ones hair. There are things you can do to stop pulling, but not everything works for everyone. I've been pulling my eyelashes out for ten years off and on during periods of stress, and I know my case is fairly mild comparatively, but keeping my nails short and my hands busy really helps. Lately I've been using physical activity to deal with my stress so I've been pulling less because of that too.
