For me, cutting involves "anorexic" behavior. Eat about 1400 calories a day, most of which come from protein so my muscles don't deteriorate. It's quick and effective, never had the problem of "starvation mode" so it works for me.

Of course, everyone else here will tell me I'm wrong and that you should just cut your recommended daily calorie intake by 500, which should make you lose about 1lb/week. It's good in theory, but considering most people give up their diet after about 2 weeks you'll have to be motivated to do it.

A third option which is probably the best in general is to just eat the same (assuming you aren't gaining weight now with what you eat), but do about 2 hours exercise a day. If you are only maintaining your weight now, if you stick to that while eating the same you'll lose about 2lbs/week. Plus it's the healthiest option.
