How much sleep do we really need? Would it be sufficient recreation for the brain to take powernaps and/or meditation sessions?
How about the body? Does the body need to -sleep- to recover from exercise, or can you sit and work a deskjob instead?

hypertrophy requires real sleep.
if you train hard, you'll notice later feeling sleepy, and sleep hard.

sleep needs: it varies by person. no one knows why.

cheating on sleep: powernaps (<20 minutes), meditation, even resting your eyes for 1-5 minutes every now and again all help. better yet, go to bed early when you have nothing to do, sleep in on weekends.

I used to gym and work in the steel factory, it was moderately hard work so I slept hard back then. Didn't dream much.

Funny thing is I slept LESS then than I do now, when I'm unemployed and draw crappy cartoons. I have trouble taking naps because they easily turn into a 10 hour one and I lose alot of time...
... guess I'll just have to experiment eh?
