What is a dumb bell exercise that will get me ready for pull ups? I train at home and all I have are dumb bells. Go.

Few exercises will even do anything, it's a movement your nervous system has to adapt to a lot as well. But bent-over rows will work the lats

why don't you just do some fucking pull ups?

Why do you need to get ready for pullups? Can you not do pullups? If this is really the case here, you need to build up your arms in general. Pushups will help, especially elevated pushups [feet on a chair, upper body facing body weight doubled.]

I do elevated pushups because they give me more than dumbbells ever have. Just 20 a night gives me a noticeable strength increase. I perform two sets of ten repetitions.

I hope you can at least try these.

how do these help pullups, pullups are done primarily by lats and biceps, and headstand push-ups are with your upper delts and triceps

you're literally working the exact OPPOSITE muscles needeOH I GOT TROLLED 10/10

THESE

If you wanna get good at something, do that something

i wanna be good at tennis
PLAY FUCKING TENNIS

i wanna be good at pullups
DO SOME GODDAMN PULLUPS

If you're too fat to do one, do this:
get a bar and jump to where your head is level with bar
resist the falling

basically, do the second half of a pullup
do this often every day

eventually you can do 1-2 pullups

now only do pullups, lots of them, every day

OP, do dumb bell exercises that work the lats:

Back rows

...That's pretty much all I can think of atm

It's about time someone posted a serious answer.

There are great excercises in themselves, they're not just to "prepare" you till you get your pullup bar, so keep doing them after you bought it.

You should do bent over/single arm rows, upward rows, and bicep curls as these work the biceps and lats, which are the main muscles involved during a pullup. Upward rows works the traps more but its still an effective bicep workout, so do it anyway.
