So my girl wants me to bring us to a 'massage therapy session' done by a professional masseuse. I claim I don't really need a massage and that the massages I give her are fine, but anyone have any experience with actual professional masseuses? What makes them worth the $80 for their hourlong session?

they feel incredible thats what makes them worth getting it done by a professional.

Professionals have a magic touch from extensive training and experience. If you think that the ones that you give her are fine, then that ones by a masseuse will be exponentially better.

they feel really good.

sucks when they get a handful of the leg hair at your ankles though, that hurts when its pulled.

My mom, dad and aunt took massage classes (though my aunt's the only one that made a career of it). It was always nice when I was a little kid to bug backrubs off my mom after difficult soccer practices or whatever. I've only been to one professional message though, and I paid $80 for it and ended up being pretty disappointed. The room and the lady's hands were really cold, and I was tense because of it the entire time. Also, the message itself wasn't that great. I guess it really depends on who you go to. I'm probably a little spoiled by growing up with messages a lot, so even though I wasn't all that impressed by message therapy, that doesn't mean you won't be. Maybe do a bit of research online, then go to one session so you can see the different message techniques in action and decide on which ones you like best, and then improve your and your girlfriends messages to each other based on what you learn? I feel that trust and knowing the person and what they like and dislike is really a huge part of a message which is maybe why my one experience with professional messages didn't turn out that great. It was too impersonal.

TL;DR: Go to one, and learn from it.

Hi, massage therapist speaking.

I took a year and a half of intense schooling, hands-on and lecture, learning about every muscle in the body, where they are, what they do, and how to fix 'em up. We're not doctors, but we're not hairdressers, either. We know what the fuck we're doing, and therapy sessions are seriously ADDICTIVE.

So spend the money, try it out. Lots of spas even offer a couples massage, where you and her would be on two different tables, in the same room, with two different therapists working, so you two could chat, or just be comfortable knowing someone else was there during the massage. Any more questions, I'm happy to answer.

not worth the money

OK massage therapist on the forum is there different benefits from different types of massages. Because i like to get the hot rocks massage because i just really like the feeling of the heat, makes me relax. and i do body building, so my girlfriend told me to go get a deep tissue massage once and it actually hurt because to me it just felt like the whole massage was me getting punched. is this because of the sensitivity of muscle tissue or something like that, or was that experience just a personal thing?

Ooh. Common misconception about deep-tissue massage : That it's the only way to get a deep, fulfilling massage. Deep Tissue is a specific type of massage that involves the disorganization and reorganization of specific fibers, it's intended for chronic scar-tissue or other healed areas, post-injury, to restore movement. Deep Tissue massage OFTEN causes discomfort the next day.

It's not really recommended for 1) people who have an acute issue, such as a pulled muscle, or simple soreness from working out, or 2) your average consumer who just wants a massage to relax and chill out. I personally have only had to resort to doing Deep Tissue work in two years of professional massage - Usually the issue can be dealt with through other modalities, and I actually find deep tissue can be more damaging than helpful.

Hot stone is totally beneficial, and if that's what feels great to you, by all means, keep at it! It's important to take care of your body and keep your circulation up. If you're looking for somethin' new, check into a place that'll do myofascial work - it works on the connective tissue web all over the body, and is a great way to kind of reorganize your whole body.

Any more ?s

I always wanted to be a massage therapist. Do you think it was a good career choice, anon massage therapist?

Honestly? Yes, but not now. I'm 22, and the best way to be a massage therapist is to work for yourself, not anyone else. Currently I'm only doing massage therapy as a hobby, after 2 years of doing it as a career, and working a day job as a real job. I'm keeping up my certifications and whatnot, though, cos in a few years when I say, have kids and me and my fiance are more financially stable, it'll be great to like. Have my own little quiet studio. But now, in the area i live in? It's not ideal. Like you can't exactly support a family well on it, and it's hard, physical labor.

I don't at all regret it, but then again, I actually really enjoy working in office buildings. I'm sure a lot of people on here would love to work in a gym, and that's actually one of the BEST places for a massage therapist to work, so i really, really recommend it for that sort of person! I just like working M-F 9-5 and that's not really possible as a CMT.

Can you please stop mentioning your "girl" constantly, hammerknave? "My girls wants a smoothie." "My girl wants a professional massage." "My girl slapped my head."

It isn't healthy to create fictional names for your right hand.

Because it'd seriously be perfectly heterosexual to get a massage on my own as a guy, right?

Fuck massages, they hurt.

PROTIP: If she wants to go to a massage therapist, the massages you give are NOT fine.
