So, /fit/... coffee. Is it really THAT bad for you? Recently my brother brought up the whole "stunts your growth" thing (which I really don't have to worry about anymore, being 19 and all), but I was just wondering if there are any scientifically proven downsides to it. I mean, it's obvious that drinking too much of it (3 cups or more) every single day can't be good, but is the whole growth-stunting thing (or any of the other "COFFE IS BAD FOR YOU BECAUSE _____" things) simply a myth of is there some evidence to back it up?

i'm about 6' 1" and 200 lbs (good shape) and i've been drinking coffee since high-school. i'm taller and bigger than most people in my family (meaning i don't think i would be bigger than i am if it weren't for the coffee). i'm sure it's not great for you, but i do fine with it.

So as always, everything in moderation

Coffee is fine; caffeine is fine; your mother is a moron. Just don't go overboard on the sugar.

To be honest, if anything, it would help your growth. One of the things that caffeine metabolizes into is theobromine, which acts as a vasodialator, increasing the blood flow (and thus the amount of oxygen and nutrients) to your brain and muscles.

Another thing it metabolizes into is paraxanthine, which can provide an increase in the lipolysis (fat burning) process, releasing glycerol and fatty acids into the blood as fuel for your muscles.

tl;dr caffeine is sexy, and I have an eidetic memory

black coffee in moderation should be fine, even a little cream won't hurt too much, it's mainly just fat.

Caffeine is only bad if you take too much and start to notice the bad side effects. If you aren't getting the shakes, headaches, insomnia and you don't NEED it to function properly you're fine.

It does acutely hamper insulin sensitivity a bit though, so you have to take that into account.

But caffeine in excess lowers the risk of diabetes! Heavy caffeine addiction is annoying though, when I go over 2 liters per day I get a headache if I don't get coffee first thing in the morning.

Also, don't drink french press or other unfiltered coffees, they have lots of cafestol which elevates blood cholesterol levels.

Cream in coffee is disgusting anyways, as is sugar. Milk is fine by me, it helps cool the coffee down to an immediately drinkable temperature.

It's horrible for you, actually.

Chronological snobbery is a logical fallacy, just because it's old, doesn't mean it didn't adhere to the constraints of the scientific process, or that it's somehow magically invalid.

If there were any disputes about the method, someone would've likely done another study by now.
