Hi /fit/

I really need to build up some stamina. I've had asthma ever since I was a little kid, so I never even bothered to start running, because it always ended up in an attack. I think the asthma is finally under control, so I want to start.

I'm 20 years old, 190 lbs, 5'11" tall, and basically at ground zero for stamina. I have a treadmill at my disposal, so what's the best way to build stamina, and quickly? I've tried running a little bit and always I end up out of breath almost instantly.

swim? It's fun and it will wear you out.

Run up and down your stairs while screaming at the top of your lungs.

And take 10,000 IU per day of Vitamin D for your asthma and take some magnesium supplements and also kill yourself.

What if I don't have access to a pool? I'm home for the summer, and all we have is a treadmill.

Crawl everywhere instead of walking

make sure you give your pulmonary system a good work out by screaming as you crawl

this will work

Focus on distance, rather than speed. Yeah, speed can be important, but once you hit about 8 min/mile pace, that's good enough for general training. Build up a good distance base. Work up to doing 30-45 minutes a day, and then do an hour+ run once a week. If you can do this, you'll be in fantastic shape.

FWIW, I also have asthma and was running 100+ miles per week until I got hurt, so you can do it.

SIGH
Forced memes are never funny, I remember the faggot who first brought the beans up.

That guy who suggested crawling everywhere you go and working your pulmonary system by screaming at the top of your lungs while you crawl was on to something. They're doing that therapy in western china for tuberculosis and asthma brought on by the coal smoke from their power generation and it works better than any other conventional therapy.

As much as this sounds like bullshit, it's true. Crawlscreaming triggers the hypoxia reflex and proliferates the production of red blood cells, like training up in high altitudes.

Thanks, I'll have to go pretty slow to do 30-45 minutes though, without taking a walking break that is.

>walking break

Standing up and walking for a spell can be the most tempting thing to do in a crawling and screaming exercise plan. What I like to do to combat this is stare at my hands in front of me and pretend that they're my feet. Somepeople get handschue (they're made by this german company, they look like shoes for your hands) to make distance training easier.

Don't expect to be able to do it at first. It's something to work up to. Shit, I'm out of shape myself right now after a string of illnesses. I plan to go running later, but am aiming for 20 minutes plus some calisthenics. It's easy to overdo it, so take it easy at first and work toward your goals incrementally.

I suggest crawling at first for roughly 15-25 minutes per day, then practicing your breathing by just emitting a high, constant whine as you crawl around. Then, eventually, you can work up to a full throated scream. Once you start screaming, working on breathing coordination is important; you'll eventually get the hang of it so that you only need to pause momentarily to draw breath between screams.

I can vouch for this.

if your can join a wrestling club for any sort of traditional wrestling do that. (Grecro-roman, freestyle, or folkstyle.) Because there is nothing like 4 hours of drilling wrestling 5 days a week to build stamina. Or if u cant do that start taking a form of martial arts to help build stamina, boxing is really good to.

Same.

The study on crawling and screaming at the same time for pulmonary conditioning was conducted in Xingshua university in western china; they're using it to rehabilitate coal mine workers and mesothelioma survivors. It's low cost and extremely effective as a therapy, but rather disturbing to observers, as you might imagine...

there is no quickly - keep doing it, it gets tedious but thats what it takes
