I'm female, 19, and have been markedly overweight my entire life. I'd like to lose the rest and get nicely toned.

At the moment, my problems are mostly belly, thighs and upper arms. Though I'm kinda fat, other people tell me I'm quite strong for my size and gender, and I can feel my muscles under the flab when I flex them. My previous activity levels were next to non-existent, and I'm still probably not the person you'd pick first for dodgeball and can't run as far as I'd like without getting winded. Though a few days ago, I hiked 70 miles in three days, carrying my supplies. I'm not sure how both of the previous statements can be true, but they are (if any of you can explain it, I'd appreciate it). So far, I've lost about half the weight I'd like, go out of my way to exercise a bit, and already look better.

I'm not sure how to go about that, though. The obvious answer is to keep doing what I'm doing, but it feels...insufficient. Like in order to see more results, I'll have to step up. I just don't know how. I can't afford a gym membership,or even the least expensive of equipment, and healthier food tends to be more expensive (I'm in a very bad time right now financially) and there's one last complication:

I'm very, very shy about working out, even in front of people who are even worse than I am and aren't going to criticize. I'm not sure why, I just tend to be a private person and find one's workout to be a private thing. So at the moment, I get up before my roommate to work out, which consists of sit ups, lifting (I use a brick of indefinite weight. I just know I feel it when I've been lifting it) and sometimes sprinting. I run from one end of the house to the other, kneel and touch the baseboard, up again, sprint back to where I started and touch that baseboard, for as long as I can. This sometimes has the unfortunate side effect of waking the roomie.

Which is where my question comes in. Having explained where I am, where I'd like to go, and my situation, what kind of workout do you recomend?

Really? It just seems...not right some how. Like you're only supposed to go jogging if you're already presentably in shape. I NEVER see other chubby people running or exercising in public. Just trim people who have obviously been doing this for a while.

If you're not a whale then it's absolutely fine to just go outside and run, and the whale thing is only because if you're really big and you run it'll really hurt your knees. Don't be afraid, embarrassed, and such as you're bettering yourself infront of other people. Who cares what they think. This is about you, and your health.

start doing basic yoga at home. it'll be hard and frustrating, but for girls it's probably the best way to get lean muscle, which is what i'm assuming you want.

my sister has a body type that sound like yours, and raelly, the fact is, its always gonna be a battle. if you're gonna half ass it and lift a brick and sprint around your house you're not gonna make it.

Lots of people at the gym are cool about overweight people working out and would be glad to help if you needed it. If you can't afford the equipment it'd be the best way to go. I'd recommend and elliptical or stationary bike to save your knees from a treadmill or walking or running on the streets/your house. That will help burn the fat then lift to keep your lean muscle and get stronger. Eating right for cheap can be done, try frozen vegetables and oatmeal and the like. Healthy is not a frozen processed "healthy" meal, so you don't need to buy those.

pick up biking, seriously. love that shit, if you don't like running its cardio, the air cools you as you ride and is genrally peacful.

i ride in the city and out in the woods/downhill type shit.

The most important thing here is a calorie deficit. For a female, odds are all you need to keep living is around 2000 calories a day, add in some jogging or other activity and then wait for results.

You need to burn 3800 calories to lose one pound. That's in excess of your intake, of course. Your body uses ~2000 a day for simply surviving. You can lay in bed all day, and burn 200 pounds, from your body's regular functions like breathing, and your heart beating, etc. So, simply eat enough to keep yourself alive (bananas are good, lots of fruit and veggies, back off on carbs a bit, but don't go atkins. Carbs are great if you plan to do a LOT of exercise, as they burn slowly enough to give you enough energy to keep a good long workout going., but if you don't do enough to burn them off, they just sit there. So take it easy on them, but don't cut them out altogether.

Fro my experience, people at the gym will pretty much help anyone. Especially fat people, as long as you show some resolve.

If you cant afford the gym or exercise equipment, make do with what you've got. Walking is free, so brisk walk (and i mean brisk, not a stroll) for 40 mins a day alongside your regular workout.

Find your BMR, -1000 on it and thats your new calorie limit a day. Eat plenty protein, low carbs, low fat etc..

i.e. lots of lean meat, vegetables, dont cut carbs completely, just eat them either morning/afternoon and dont eat them past 6pm.
