Hello /fit/, SQUATZ thread.

So I go to a gym in Arizona, and they have pretty much everything except a squat rack. I do stronglifts 5x5, and substitute freeweight squats with...

Ok, promise you won't rage....

Smith machine squats. Now I know barbell squats are better, but a smith machine is the only thing I can do squats on, so is that ok? Or would substituting smith machine squats with dumbbell squats be better? Thanks.

Smith machine is fine. Don't worry about it.

The only reason the damn thing is hated so much on /fit/ is because all the macho pricks on here are all old fashioned.

How about front squats? Then you get to practise your cleans as well.

But would I make as much progress than if I were to do regular squats? I'm not sure if they would fit in with my routine.

Thanks for the replies so far, anyone else have any input?

Front squats obviously shift the center of gravity, giving them a different feel than regular squats. You will certainly not be able to do as much weight with them. At least they are something different to try, like if you hit a plateau, or get bored with other leg exercises, or hurt yourself on the shitty smith machine.

I despise smith machines. Smith machine squats are terrible because either you put your feet ahead of the bar, in which case you are working against the motion of the weight; or you put your feet under the bar, which puts tremendous shear forces on your spine and shins.

Does your gym have a hack squat machine or a leg press? You can do leg presses with your feet positioned low on the platform so as to put the force generated more on your quads and less on your glutes.

Substitute tricep bars for a dumbells and load up the weights. Or do single leg squats with dumbells. Or duct tape plates together onto a dumbell. There's shit tons of ways to not use a machine.

Yes, because at a gym, there are no workers at all. And nobody but you works out. Kill yourself.

Fuck yes. Just make sure that you can go rock bottom with just your bodyweight first. If you can't do that then do NOT start adding weight otherwise you'll fuck something up.

Shut up and Squat.

In a gym? Well, I guess you could.

If it's the two guys at the ends of the bar spot, I guess it's okay. I'm a social guy, but even I'd feel bad asking TWO guys for a spot.

Alright cool, I'll give them a shot. What would be the proper form for one of these types of squats though? I tried to look up both King Squats and Dumbbell Squats but I either got people with King in their name doing regular squats or ladies with 5lbs doing aerobics. Do I just keep the dumbbells at head level, palms facing forward or what?

You sir, fail at using google. First result of "king squat".

Contrary to the above post I would recommend this man's form.
