Hey /fit/. I like video games, and I play DDR every now and then for fun. But I was thinking about it, and would DDR be considered HIIT?

I mean you do some fast stepping:

I blame training specificity. I played a lot more DDR than I ran miles. You get more efficient at playing DDR specifically and you lose some weight but eventually you plateau and have to take a break like any other exercise and do something biomechanically different.

There is technique in DDR. You learn how to use your legs in subtle, less strenuous ways but still get you results in terms of hits, misses, score, getting past certain key parts of a song.

At some point a few years ago DDR stopped being fun to me but if I really cared and took it seriously I'm sure I could dominate by training for DDR with accessory exercises the same way serious athletes of more respected sports trained for theirs.

I don't think Pump It Up isn't any more-or-less strenuous than DDR. The difficulty comes from years of learning how to read horizontal and vertical arrows really well and the diagonal/center steps of Pump It Up are confusing as hell., like being forced to speed read a foreign language. Mind, not body.

I had a friend in highschool who was obese, started playing DDR and got addicted. He played for many months and became proficient at it and lost a ton of weight and actually became rather fit.

OP, you're on /fit/. So you have a computer amirite? Hurrr's what you do:

1. Download Stepmania 3.9 with as many songs as possible.
2. Buy/Find a USB DDR pad and program it to work with your computer. (can't use the crappy plastic pads on carpet, I bought one of the metal Cobalt Flux pads).
3. Spend 30 min - 1 hour busting your ass
4. ????????
5. PROFIT!!!!!

Start w/ Light Mode to build your balance/reflexes, work up to Standard and then Heavy Mode. Increase your time/intensity to stave off boredom and it's total win.

You need to get out of the stone age of dancing games. People don't just play to pass anymore, they play for score and when you are doing 180bpm+ 16th note runs you need a fucking bar. Every elite player uses the bar. It used to be there for noobs and as an emergency bar but now it has evolved into a standard part of gameplay.
