Keep practicing with your team. Don't skip one practice, ever, and just keep running. That's really all there is to it. Oh, and during the actual race, get it in your head that you NEED to, absolutely HAVE TO pass the guy in front of you. After you've passed him, then start advancing on the next guy.
XC is in the fall/winter, at least where I live, so you should be able to get better these next few months.
