I've started running. Currently doing 3.5 miles 3 times a week or so.

What are realistic goals in terms of increasing distance?

That's not bad, slowly increase time/intensity every week or every other week, and youll get faster, leaner, and go farther

The best way in terms of health and prolonged increasment of your endurance is to buy a pulse measuring watch and train with it. It's not the distance or the temporal length of the training that matters but rather the heart frequency over time.

There are good books on that subject if you want recommendations...

Okay, then I'll get a pulse measuring watch.
I'd like some recommendations.

Going out to run now, hopefully the thread hasn't died when I get back.

Just one thing, don't increase both intensity and distance at the same time, and don't increase too much at a given time- shin splints will fuck you.

The easiest thing to do is just buy a runner's magazine with a training plan article. Or just find one online. The usual method is staggering, where you run a few shorts, a long, an intermediate, then bump up all your runs, with a lot of short (i.e 3-mile) runs to maintain.

Try this:
