hey guys, joining the airforce here (inb4 airforce is for the wimps, etc) and I'm a little paranoid about what's going to be expected of me. I'm a firefighter so I get some workouts on a regular basis and can finish my mile and a half within 13 minutes now, but I still worry that it's not enough and it'll be beyond my ability to make it through basic as easily if I'd like, if at all.

Any advice on what to expect and what to do to get ready?

Pic unrelated...just one of my company vehicles

you're not gonna fly planes

actually I'm a flight medic. I don't plan to be a pilot, but I'll be on them.

haha I hope so. I've got the self conscious issues that most people do when they're not all cut up like the bowflex guys on tv and everything. I don't have a lot of body fat but I'm definitely not some poster child for physical fitness either. The thing that makes me worry the most is that I'm one of the most out of shape guys on my department. Our chief pushes the PT / CPAT tests like crazy. You could have a 5 page resume of training but if you don't do too hot on the PT, you won't get hired. Most of the guys I run with finish their 1.5mile in about 11 minutes.

Just makes me worry that I'm not where I need to be. Any workout ideas? I have no equipment, so it'll be whatever I can do as far as running, pushups, etc

I'm assuming you're in the USA. Given the situatio in Iraq right now and knowing a few people in the different branches of the military (air/land/sea) I have heard quite a bit about the moral issue being a bit low over in hte sandbox by the guys on the ground. I've also heard that recruiters will jump through hoops to get you into the corps and fill the paperwork needed as each man they get in is a bonus ($) for them. If you're not in the Seals or Marines you've got a good head start over many people that are joining.

I would keep your mouth mum about being a firefighter during basic because it's kinda like saying 'I can do X push ups in a minute' and the DI might see you as a hotshot and grind you down by upping the fitness workout for you.

agreed, the chief was telling me the same thing. He went through when he was younger into the security forces part of the air force...said don't be the first, don't be the last, and blend in withthe dust on the wall

I would like to add that if you are joining the Seals and Marines you'd better have good fitness or you won't make the cut.. If there is anything I've learned from all my mates (I've not been in the core myself) that are in the core is that running is the most important thing to keep your ass alive when you're in the hot-zone. How much you can lift and the chin ups and such is all secondary but still useful for humping your kit but running is most important to stay alive.

I remember something a mate of mine was telling me about running with cheap 2-5lb ankle/wrist weights and a weight vest (vest loaded with weights ~10lbs I think) reallys helps with the wokrout. I'd probably look into getting a slim backpack and evenly weighting that down with ~10-15lbs then go fo rthe runs. For better ventilation try a (Gucci kit but VERY cool on the temps) www.deuterusa.com -> Hydration -> Race Exp Air is what I own. 13+2L expansion that is very slim to the body. THe suspended back mesh will keep the back very cool. Waist + chest strap to keep everything centered.

Ebay has some used from time to time but most that own one rarely sell it and for good reason because it's an awesome bag.

Don't fucking worry about it. The PT portion of AF basic training is not hard. Your run time is not great, but it's definitely good enough to start BMT. FACT: I was leaner at the start of basic than at the end.

You should worry more about all of the retarded shit they make you do, like folding t-shirts and underwear, numerous fire drills, reporting statements, gay gay gay gay, etc. Also, don't laugh when people get yelled at, even though it's funny as shit. Laughing will earn you pushups.

Run a lot to get ready. Because during Basic, it's all endurance. Look up drills online and practice them everyday so you can get through Basic easier.
