Start with a mile. If you can't run the whole way, run as much of it as you can and walk the rest. Eventually you'll be able to do a full mile.
Then try for 5 miles. Same deal. Eventually, you'll make 5 miles. No real point in running further than that. From there, start working on improving your pace.
6mph = 10 minute mile. 12mph = 5 minute mile.
Try to improve your pace slowly until you reach your goals. 5 minute miles are damn impressive and most people can't do them, so don't expect to reach this level of fitness anytime soon. Keep working at it though, and eventually you'll finish your 5 mile run in less than 30 minutes, then you can feel good about yourself.
