Self Esteem Anonymous
Dear /fit/,

Theres nothing wrong with wanting to improve your health, but aspiring to archetypes of beauty wont improve your self esteem. Sixpacks, flawless skin, or hairless bodies wont improve your life to any real extent if you're in the wrong frame of mind to begin with. Youth and beauty are fleeting, and ultimately your perception of what you have is the most important factor regarding your own happiness.

Be comfortable with who you are. Everyone looks different, and theres a profound beauty in this difference.

While I don't agree with the trolls below you, I do see your point. But the problem is a lot of those things you mentioned are what kills peoples self-esteem in the first place, so to them getting it back means getting rid of what they think flaws them.

"flaws" dont make people unhappy -- peoples desires make them unhappy.
>> Anonymous
>>39912

Well you can either grow up and be ugly or do something about it and fucking not need to care about your insecurities.

OP are you a troll?

Shut up nigger. Let people do what they want with themselves. I'm guessing you've never aspired to anything because if you had you'd know anything less is unsatisfactory.

>>39918

yes, because ugly and beautiful are ABSOLUTES right? its not relative at all. get a brain, moran.

Flaws don't make people unhappy?
Acne sure as hell made me unhappy, and it's most definitely a flaw. If you want to say me wanting to get rid of my acne is what made me unhappy, sure. But only because acne is horrible. It hurts, it gets you ridiculed and it looks bad. There is no embracing some flaws, because they HAVE to go.

now, if you want to narrow this down to cosmetic surgery fixable flaws you may have a point. But this is /fit/, is it's about health and fitness. Having flawless skin, and six packs does show health. Being fit and muscled will yield a longer life than those who are fat and sedentary. There is no reason to embrace excess fat, it hurts your entire body. And /fit/ is often about /fat/ so.. gb2/fa/ maybe? At least their obsession is just material and visual.

I know you're just trying to make the point that advertising and magazines are what make people want to be muscled and have flawless skin, beauty is only skin deep, you'll never be perfectly happy with yourself and blah blah blah, but it isn't coincidence that the maintenance of having muscles and low body fat keeps you in better general health than those who don't.

Good appearance and looks = autopilot for self-confidence and win. Not everyone has to give in to the way they look if they don't like it, not if they can do something about it.

Exercise is good for you (DURRR) and everyone wants decent skin. Besides, most ugly/fat people don't even want to try to improve themselves, they just wistfully hope it will magically happen one day.

So easy to say "be comfortable with who you are" when you're not 400lbs.

In the real world, people are superficial bastards. It's a fucking cruel world out there, and you owe it to yourself to strive for the greatest advantages you can find.

Being fit/attractive, all else being equal, *will* improve your life as others' perception of you will improve. It's a fact that interviewers tend to hire the more attractive of equivalently qualified applicants.

Whats the point of fitness is the actual effort required in order to achieve it is just too much? Some people are just lazy, and I'm not going to do something to improve my quality of life that requires a significant decrease in order to be obtained.
>> Guil
>>39963
>Some people are just lazy
If you're lazy you could just kill yourself now and not waste the time, theres enough people in the world and no one is going to miss an unmotivated fatass who thinks the cons outweigh the pros for being fit.

Unless you have a severe case where you store fat like no one else on the planet then you have no excuse. As if a year of hard work(guesswork, unless you're a monster) to get to a decent weight, then basic enjoyable activity afterwards is so horrible compared to dying at 40

And god forbid McDonald's isn't on your menu anymore, shit is SOOO GOOD.

You speak as if a pleasant physical appearance is the only contribution one can make to this world.

So because beauty is fleeting we shouldn't aspire to be our best? As long as we're using "it won't last" as a justification for not striving for perfection it would be hypocritical to go on living. Because, you know, you're going to die soon anyways.

You people make me sick

Kill yourself
And anyways, the whole self esteem is the biggest load of horse shit anyone's had shoved down their throat. Only societies such as ours which can afford to sit around and feel sorry for itself all day long have anything like a 'self esteem' problem, and that's only because people believe their lives should be different from what they are. This is their own fault. I'm not in charge of your decisions. I'm not in charge of your well being. Therefore, you are responsible for your life, and all the problems therein.

So take responsibility, improve yourself at every opportunity, and you will be a good, confident person. If you don't, you'll be living a life void of all that which make life worth living, resulting in a waste of humanity, of a life, an evolutionary dead end culminating in the failure of a genetic code.

Have fun being a fag, OP

Don't forget being fit and healthy is about more than just what you look like. It's also about actually being healthy, you know.

You feel better, things work better, you can relax and sleep easier, move and act easier, think more clearly. You can feel more free.

Wouldn't it suck to be born some 1000's of years from now into a race of lardasses, and see that those before you evolved your race into physically useless beings?

But I agree with
>Sixpacks, flawless skin, or hairless bodies wont improve your life to any real extent if you're in the wrong frame of mind to begin with.

Frame of mind is important regardless of how fit you are. How fit you are also affects your frame of mind, and your frame of mind affects how fit you will become.

> the actual effort required

15 minutes a day at first, eventually half an hour.

Yeah, that's a huge effort. Better just get fat.

My personal experience is that my life went to shit when I quit playing soccer and lost any sense of fitness. My grades dropped, I couldn't concentrate, and I stopped caring about anything.
>> Anonymous
I work out and am trying to lose fat and gain muscle so that I don't turn out like my family, who all have Type II diabetes and are giant fatties.

The only problem is, being the only 'skinnier' person in the house, you get into the 'well I'm not as fat as they are' mode, which isn't good.

AND its fund AND you get to know people AND you have something to talk about:
I was the "Anime" guy in School now I am the "fitness nut": its better to tell you co-workers that you ran at event XY on the weekend than you sat on your ass watching anime/playing PC.

First of all, fitness is not fun, it's hard, or else more people would be into it. As for the rest of the points you raised, including fun, they apply equally as well, if not more so, to a myriad of other hobbies, such as politics, or even television.

your wrong, working out and seeing my self healthy and fit gives me confidence, looking at a skinny bag of bones = less confidence which is why anorexics are like they are. Also if you can't accept your self then you will always be the same even if your out of shape you should accept yourself and strive for a better life style and not be striving to get laid , working out to get laid is not going to work, you need to see that you have changed and are a new man if you are the same coward just cause you look strong don't mean girls gonna like you they gonna talk to you and think you a dumb ass or to scared to talk to them possibly a gay man.

>>40417
Actually, in a lot of circles skinny is more desirable than buff. And you don't need an good body image or "fitness" to have good self-confidence.

And whoever has trouble talking to girls needs to take a lesson from the feminists and realize that chicks are just people, no more no less.

Ignoring the bottom half of your post...
It's true. I would have more self confidence in general if I felt more in control of my body.
