I never see Atkins/ketosis shit on this board. It was recommended a lot on 420chan's fitness board (for whatever that's worth). Anyway, I was just wondering what the general /fit/ opinion of it is. I've been doing it rigorously for about two weeks with hardly any exercise and have lost more weight (not just water weight) than I have when I was going to the gym every other day. Also just to be clear I'm talking about it strinctly in terms of burning fat. so?

For burning fat it's great, but you do have to watch your sat/trans fat and cholesterol.

if you're losing internal carbs, then you're not losing "just water"

internal carbs what the fuck?

The liver begins to process fats in to ketosomethings that the brain feeds on. They also get excreted through your skin, lungs and pee, you're basically breathing sweating and peeing your fat out

Oh God this is what I get for not being technical about it.

"In biochemistry class, doctors learn that fat "burns in the flame of carbohydrate." When one is eating enough carbohydrates, fat can be completely broken down as well. But when one's body runs out of carb fuel to burn, its only choice is to burn fat inefficiently using a pathway that produces toxic byproducts like acetone and other so-called "ketones." The acetone escapes through the lungs--giving Atkins followers what one weight-loss expert calls "rotten-apple breath"[91]--and the other ketones have to be excreted by the kidneys. We burn fat all the time; it's only when we are carbohydrate deficient and have to burn fat ineffectively that we go into what's called a state of ketosis, defined as having so much acetone in our blood it noticeably spills out into our lungs or so many other ketones they spill out into our urine.

To wash these toxic waste products out of our system our body uses a lot of water. The diuretic effect of low carb diets can result in people losing a gallon of water in pounds the first week.[92] This precipitous early weight loss encourages dieters to continue the diet even though they have lost mostly water weight[93] and the state of ketosis may be making them nauseous or worse.[94] If one wanted to try to lose water weight, sweating it away in a sauna may be a more healthful way."

I'd just like you to know that your post did not go wasted, you taught me something new and valuable, and that is why I love you. ;__;

also to note, longterm consequences of atkins are ketoacidosis, which really strains your limits on exercise; also one who is genetically prone to diabetes or other such metabolic disorders will have much more an effect on.

my opinon is that you should eat some carbs......you have probably just lost water/muscle weight mostly and a bit of fat......but you'll learn just keep researching....what am i supposed to just give you the tome right now or what? You wouldn't even know what to do with it if i did.

I did Atkin's for 3/4 months and it was great. I used it to cut a lot of fat. I noticed after a couple of months, I would cheat - which as you know pulls you from ketosis for a few hours or up to a day for a real bad cheat session. When I found I ended up cheating more than not, I quit Atkin's and went to a regular diet - similar to how one walks away from a blackjack table with their winnings.

OP: few things:
1) Drink a gallon of water daily. I went everywhere with an old gallon milk jug filled with some flavor of Crystal lite. At end of day, I knew for sure if I drank a gallon or not.
2) My wife used to hate the ketosis breath. She fondly stated that I smelled like I was shitting out of my mouth.
3) I know it might feel right to eat the worst cuts of meat - since they are carb-free - but try to stick with leaner cuts when possible.
4) Get ketostix from the pharmacy. They are pee strips that tell you if you are in ketosis and to what degree. I used to cut them in half lengthwise to double the number and save $$. I did this to not go too deep into ketosis as well as to confirm I was in it.
5) Take a fiber supplement. It was one of the grossest things I ever had to do when I 'forgot' to take a shit for a few days and then when it wanted to come out it felt like I was having a baby. With my finger I had to push it back in and break it up. I only tell you this as an anon, since no one in my real life knows this.
6) Variety is key to sticking on Atkins. I had every flavor cheese cut into 1oz fingers, meats cut into 3-4 oz cutlets ready to go.
7) I tried to have a salad daily. Better greens like red and green leaf are lower carb than Iceburg lettuce.
8) Daily vitamin - I took centrum.
9) Ketosis done right will make you a lazy piece of shit. If you can exercise, you are doing something wrong.

That's all I can think of right now. Hope it helps.
