hi /fit/
Are abs really genetic?
Is it okay to not work on my quads and calves and still do upper body? I ask this because I don't like how bulgy legs look and I like wearing my currenty pants/jeans..

From what I understand, the genetic part is whether they are symmetrical or lopsided. Everybody can have defined abs.

if you don't work on your lower body, your gains on your upper body will come slower than usual.

That is total bull. Don't give wrong information.
Yes, you can only work on your upper body but I think you should at least tone your lower body but don't do any weights, etc.

what are you stupid? working on large muscles groups like the legs releases extra anabolic hormones that help with the repair of micro-tears in the muscles all over your body. if you don't work them out, you limit the amount of anabolic hormones your body produces and hinders the potential of muscle growth in your upper body.

There is some truth in this but it's only for bodybuilding and usually just refers to people who started squatting who weren't already and then breaking plateaus in their upper body.

Do one legged squats (pistols). Your legs will get very strong and you won't add excess bulk. The ways your abdominals will look at genetic but the fact they may not be visible is related to your diet and your metabolism (along with exercise of course).

and what makes you think your body can tell the difference between pistols and squats with a bar and weights you moron? your diet will determine whether you'll grow or not, go spew your crap somewhere else

Full body workouts are important for health reasons. If you ever find yourself actually using your ub3r strength in the real world, you could injure the shit out of your unworked legs. Also, strong legs promote good posture. You want to get a lower back injury because of lower body weakness?

Don't worry about "bulking up" your legs. You'll just look stupid if you get all ripped up top and have little chicken legs on the bottom. Full body is best and the extra metabolic boost from having strong legs will get you your rock hard abs all the quicker.

True. Mass will be determined by the caloric intake.

Your body is a whole, train is as a whole. Besides you won't grow that much, you're not Arnold.

Chad Waterbury's book (Muscle Revolution) is one of many good sources of information. Avoid 4chan for training advice
