When I do bicep curls and the going gets rough, I curl my wrists up too to help raise the dumbbell. Is this cheating? Should I maintain keeping my wrist aligned straight with my forearm?
>> Anonymous
Why do bicep curls? O.o Fucking useless imho.

Pay no attention to the dumbass behind the curtain.

Yes, technically it is cheating, and with a higher weightload, curling your wrist too much on a curl can be harmful.

He's got a point though. It's an isolation exercise for a small muscle that doesn't even really do much.

If you can't keep your wrists straight on a curl you probably should switch to hammer curls until you can take the weight.

Balancing. Arms look weird with nothing but hueg triceps from press ups Been there done that. Once you start building biceps you'll find you can lift everyday things in ways you previously didn't find comfortable.

If you never try you will never know.

Thanks for the advice all. Good stuff.

drop to the next lower weight that you can handle, and then the next, then until you can't handle a measly few pounds. make sure to do the switch as soon as possible. keep working to failure with progressively smaller weights. pros do this.

Press ups for tris lol.

I have balanced out fucking cannons for arms from deadlifts, push presses and bent presses and both my bis and tris are defined for all of your lives worth. All without some faggotry assistance/lever/pulley/cumwad exercises. Compound for teh win.

Thanks internet tough guy. Now go suck on your creatine laced baby formula. I always wondered who the fuck still calls arms 'cannons', now I know.

Who the hell needs creatine, honestly? Just eat more B's. In b4 pencilneck pussies who can't call their arms cannons.

Varying grip pull/chin ups work your biceps plenty. Compound exercices > isolation exercises.

he might be an asshole but he's right, forget the biceps sally

there's nothing more manly then a huge bicep.

yes there is a huge penis

Yes but you don't do any isolation or concentration moves, so regardless of how "explosive" your "canons" are, they are not as good as they can be.

I built my arms with a dozen variations of bicep curls and tricep pull downs, kick backs, ropes, skull crushers, etc.

big biceps attached to skinny little forearms make me lol

I think the problem isn't whether bicep curls are good or not. It really does depend on your goal. Personally I don't do bicep curls cause I'm not a bodybuilderfag, but if someone's goal is to have huge and balanced muscles rather than raw strength than there should be no reason that he's not doing bicep curls. If his question was "Hi I train to be strong and I do tons of bicep curlz am I cheating?" then I'd be happy to rip him a new one too. But seriously, he didn't ask for any of that, so why turn this into a "CURLZ FOR DA GURLZ" war?

amen. If you are working out to look good and are NOT doing bicep curls. Well you are probably a huge idiot.
>> Anonymous
>>47809
Hey hey, let's not misunderstand though. You'll still develop a fantastic body from heavy compounds, but not the XBOXHUEG muscles that bodybuilders have.

I would agree with the idea that just doing bicep curls is idiotic. But bicep curls aren't just for body builders. The bicep is functional in day to day activity and sports.

I, who was called a bodybuilderfag for mentioning the variety of curls and tricep exercises i do, work everything in pretty much everyway possible.

I do curls, yes, and a lot of variations. I do triceps a bunch of ways. I do chest a bunch of ways. I hit all my muscle groups from all angles.

I don't like the "strength is just compound movements" idea camp. I do compounds. I squat, I overhead press, I do just about everything, at some point or another.

But focused training can really help balance out the appearance and the strength. You don't want a weak point in your body. You don't want to have to stop doing a compound exercise because your arms are tired when your legs or shoulders are fresh. Targeting the arms can help bring them up to speed.

Really, for as much as some people espouse curls, and others compounds, and others just squatz, the best approach is almost always a balanced one that incorporates all of it.

I think if you're doing proper compounds you won't need to isolate your arms. Your bicep should get pretty strong from rows (both seated and bent-over) and pullups (switching between underhand and overhand). I know my triceps get a shitload of work from benching, close-grip benching, dips, etc...
When I started sticking to compounds it was as you said, my muscles were unbalanced in strength so my arms would give up before my target muscle would, but as I kept working out my entire body balanced out which I think is the ideal sort of balance in strength.

Close grip bench targets mostly triceps, so I count that mostly as an arm exercise. Same with dips.

Rows, with proper form, should have minimal bicep involvement, of course there is some, but the main emphasis should be on squeezing the shoulder blades together and letting that do most of the movement.

But yeah, if you're doing a good mix of compound stuff and are including varied grip pull ups, etc, then you'll do well. But there is nothing wrong with curls and extensions!

I do 3x8 wide grip pullups, 3x8 neutral grip pullups, and 4x20 varied placement pushups everyday, in addition to some weight work which may include concentration and isolation exercises.

Wait wait wait, I wouldn't put dips and close grip bench on the same level as kickbacks. While dips and close-grip EMPHASIZE triceps doesn't mean there aren't tons of synergists, as where tricep kickbacks and pulldowns don't have any at all. It's like saying the squat is a quad exercise or the bench press is a chest exercise.
As with rows it's true they alone won't make your biceps huge, but that's what I'm trying to say. A good mixture of compounds will give you an overall strong body.

Bench Press is a Chest Exercise. There are very few honest to goodness 'isolation exercises.'

But whatever the primary muscle is, thats what kind of exercise it is. Bench Press is a good example, as it is by far and large chest, followed by tricep, a little deltoid if you go low, etc.

A truly compound move would be something like a power clean, as it recruits back, total legs, glutes, and shoulders, in addition to supporting muscles.
