/fit/, I don't know much in general about fitness so I'm curious: how far would doing basic shit like pushups and crunches or maybe using a punching bag get you?

will increase your strength, but you wont be able to run any further.

so basic exercises will actually get you some decent (not great, I know--but decent) results then?

the exercises like pushup ect will give you more strength and increase how much energy you burn in a day, depending on how much you eat this could lead to some muscle gain maybe some fat loss, the increase in fitness would come from not weighing as much. do you just want to work out in your room or something? best bet for fitness gains without running ect would be punching bag.

well my situation is that I'm losing weight (used to be a FAT fucker, down to about 200 pounds now) but don't really want to be ultra skinny or skinny fat either.
at the same time, there's no gyms around here so I know I'd not have the motivation to keep up with anything too rigorous. so you pretty much nailed it, I'm looking to see what I can feasibly do at home, ie do at home without building a home gym in the basement. I'm not particularly obsessed with bulking up, just not being completely scrawny/muscleless when I've finished losing the weight.

it doesn't help that I was a bike messenger for a while (lol fat bike messenger right?) but quit, so there's some daily exercise gone. still ride a bit though, and I tend to walk around everywhere, totalling 3-6 miles a day.

I'd be open to running later on if it would really help, at the moment though I'm still in the sort of shape where I can't get very far and I also have a nasty infected ingrown toenail that tends to get fucked up by running. seeing a podiatrist about it soon.

it sounds like your more interested in keeping body fat down rather than being able to run a marathon.
invest in a swiss ball and buid up muscle using free weights, focus on your core. press ups and punching bag for upper body, use the swiss ball for everything from shoulders to steeper press ups. if you dont want to start running straight away get your self a skipping rope. this way you dont have to buy a home gym but can still do a pretty decent work out.

cont
step one hold the weight out to your side, arms straight, step two bring the weight above your head slowly, all your actions have to be slow and deliberate. step three end up with the weight on the other side of your body. then work your way back around. try to do 20 in each set. 3 sets a day. every second day. its a really good core exercise for working of love handles.
