Martial arts are very good for flexibility, decent for cardio if you do sparring, but of themselves won't give you that much of a muscular boost. You'll get more toned, at least if you work hard, but it's just not the sort of exercise that makes your muscles larger.
If you want to lose weight with it, do sparring. It's hard work, and if youy can keep doing it for a while you'll probably start to lose weight. I don't think it'd be as helpful as going running or swimming for an hour, but it'll do something.
Most useful part of it is getting some discipline. Most places will tie in some exercises as part of it so that you do build some strength. Place I went to had little bits of exercise over the 1 1/2 hour block, so that by the end of it everyone had done 100 pushups, crunches and squats, and doing that twice a week will get you more fit.
If you really want to get fit, do the MA classes, and go to a gym on the off days with a weight loss/fitness gain program. Keep this up for a few months and you'll see a big difference.
