On the topic of tuna...

How much is too much?

I was eating a can a day... which was going a good long way to my protein limit, until someone informed me of some mercury elements or some kind of abundance of a vitamin harmful in large doses.

WUTS THE DEAL? Am I good to munch a can a day? Or is 3 a week more like it?

Depends on your tuna. Albacore is once a week, your normal just canned tuna is every three days. Google for more elaborate answers.

Speaking of Tuna. What do you guys season it with? I don't really like eating it plain, and mayonnaise is simply unacceptable.

I just hate fish. Canned tuna in particular makes my stomach turn. Fortunately, I've found a way to make it more palatable.

Mustard and tuna. What is wrong with you people.

I tried that recently because I prefer mustard over mayonnaise on pretty much everything, but... no. Perhaps if I'd had it that way since childhood I'd be into it.

FDA says something like 3 cans a week. I'm pretty sure I've read other studies that say a can a day of chunk light is OK. Your body is actually able to build up some kind of tolerance to mercury in doses as small as what you get in tuna. Consider that there are countries where wild caught marine fish are the staple diet. The largest danger is to pregnant or soon to be pregnant women.

Those countries include Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Norway, Finland and Sweden.

All of them have extremely high rates of brain and stomach cancer, despite Okinawans holding the record for longest life span on average.

You can avoid mercury by making sure your "seafood" is actually farm raised and by eating fish that live near the surface. Tuna is so high in mercury because they're practically bottom feeders, and even if your tuna is farm raised and not from the ocean, they've evolved to the point where they're born with inherent amounts of mercury.
