so I've decided I'm wayyyy to heavy (5'9 245lbs)

In addition to cutting out fast food, I decided to take up running. Today I went to the school's fitness center... I only managed to run one mile, in 15 minutes, before my legs cramped up so bad I couldn't do any more

Is this normal? Will I get better soon? Any tips?

Sounds normal. Make sure you stretch before and after. Keep hydrated. Cut fat/sugar from your foods etc.

Will you get better soon? eh...it can vary from person to person but generally within a couple weeks you should see improvement as long as you keep at it consistently (3+ times a week)

Yea that pretty bad, but if you stick with it you will notice significant improvement relatively quickly (i.e. 2-3 weeks)

If you have dedication, you will do it.

Try to eat fruit such as bananas if you can fit it in your diet plan.
The potassium in them help against cramping.

P.S.

umm caffine(green tea pills work for me you can get ephedra if you are hardcore).......also eat afterwords it will help boost your metabolism......eat fiber....cut carbs...breathe through your nose....it will hurt for a while but eventually you will develop the ability to do it for a long time....good shoes make a difference....i suggest you waste money on an ipod of some sort as well so you will feel guilty seeing it sitting there never being used because you aren't jogging with it like you are supposed to do.......

also eggs have phosphorus in them which helps with your O2....basically your ability to pull oxygen out of the air....morning eggs and oatmeal or cottage cheese or whey protein if you can get it.....lunch protein and fiber....dinner protein and fiber good luck :)

I'm actually about to go run, myself, as soon as it gets light.

No bullshit, man: Drink water. Always have a glass of ice water with you throughout the day and just sip on it. Get some vitamins, take them daily, you can still eat foods you like, just don't OVEReat, and don't eat sugary/fatty foods in excess. Moderation is key here.

Also, try to just snack through the day instead of feasting twice daily.

The first week of running is the worst, man, trust me. The first few days suck because you're out of shape, it hurts, your body is not used to the pain you're inflicting, etc., and you can't even see results yet. I'm telling you, bro, if you stick with it (3+ times a week, I run pretty much every day), you'll not only lose weight, but you'll begin to really appreciate running and not only what it does for you physically, but mentally as well.

Samefag here:
Hey man, just read over your post again - At 5'9, 245, I just wanted to also point out that it is VERY important to get some good, well-supporting running shoes and to try and run on the softest surface you can find (dirt, grass, etc) Avoid running on pavement, 245 coming down on your knees on pavement isn't exactly ideal, but if it's all you have around, just pay attention to your knees and joints. You *can* do damage, so if you're still feeling sharp pains in your joints 3+ hours after running, take the next day off and ice them down. You may want to talk to a doctor, as well, about anything he can do to help, IE suggesting training regiments, etc.

Also, picking up cycling is always a good idea because it's virtually 0 impact and, DOOD, U R RIDING A BIKE AND GET 2 WER COOL JERZEYS OMG. But seriously, look into that, too.

Good luck. Stick with it. Get through the first few weeks and you're set.
