your arm muscles are all tense, it's so used to that position it doesn't know anything else. you should be able to press down to the bone without any pain or recoiling, just mild discomfort.
take a tiger for example, their muscles go as hard as brick when tensed up, but a keeper can feel them relaxed they are all mushy.
a chiropractor loosen the tension, strength training will increase your muscles ability to tolerate pain.
p.s. i just been typing here for 2 hours, I had to mentally relax that, and all I got was to move around the trained mush somewhat. i was exactly like you describe a year ago, before i started weight training.
