hi /fit/.
I'm buying a mountain bike, but i don't really know anything about them. I've been told by a friend to get one with "an aluminium frame, disc brakes and suspension" and not to really be too bothered about other factors, but I'm not going to take that advice.

What brands should I avoid, and is there any features on a mountain bike that i should make sure it has?

(i only really intend to use it to get around the city, ratehr than actual off-road biking)

thanks

dont buy a mountain bike unless your going on the fucking mountain terrain its a waste of money and its shit compared to road bikes which are fucking briliant and you can go 9000mph with them

Where are you going to be riding your bike OP?
If you're in a city/suburbs get a road or racing bike.

If you live in the country and plan on driving to dirt trails to use your bike, then you should get a mountain bike. People who use mountain bikes to get around the city look like douchebags.

i mostly bike on roads, but once in a while I really want to use the same bicycle for rougher slopes, dirt, pebbles maybe, tree roots, etc.

i use a hybrid bike. my commute is only a few miles, i don't need regular road bike. too dedicated and limited.

It depends where you live. I'm surprised anyone can get around on a road bike in my city; my brother has one and he says it's hell. The roads are shit and giant potholes and massive gravel are the norm. For these reasons I use a mountain bike.

The only criteria I would suggest to the OP is that the bike should be light (possibly aluminium) and should have at least front suspension. I would recommend one with toe cages or something similar. Biking without having something to hold your foot on the pedal is absolute ASS (http://www.abc-of-mountainbiking.com/info/mountainbike-pedals-types.asp). Other than that I would say stay away from something expensive (my bike was $1800), since you don't know how much you're going to enjoy it and use it.

Wait do I look stupid for using this bike on the road then?

I mean honestly your general bike owner doesn't know shit about suspensions for different terrains or anything. And your general bike owner is NOT going to purchase two different bikes either.

I guess mine is just an All Terrain type of bike though, seems good for trails/road

If you're going to spend $600 on something I'd suggest researching it for a week or so to make sure you know what the fuck you're doing.

It's never fun to waste money or time on a shitty product or one that wasn't made for your needs.

lol, bikefags. Really, you fuckers think you're Lance Armstrong or some shit.

At the end of the day a bike is a fucking bike. There are only 3 things to be concerned with:

-If you ride a bmx bike you'll look like a tool
-If you ride a racing bike you'll look like a fag who spends too much time biking
-The average joe doesn't know or give a shit about what kind of bike you're riding.

$600 on a bike isnt much...

get a standard kona or something, dont be tempted in getting back suspension and shit if your not actually gnna use it off road

Bikes are great and all for exercise, but being a college student on a budget, they're not always an option.

That's why rather than bike, I skateboard around town. It's great exercise except for one leg getting more of a workout than the other.

Oh one important consideration, Supercycles are shit. I have one and I've never had so many problems with a bike in my life.

Could always learn to skate both ways, would be awkward as fuck but it would be awesome once you got it worked out.

Unless youre doing alot of really rough terrain you dont need a full suspension bike (which is what you posted in OP, shocks in front and back). reason being its more expensive and you lose alot of the power in the pedaling to the shocks.

If youre riding around the city a road bike or touring bike of some sort will be what youre looking for. Hybrid bikes are an option also, big thing though will be the bike's weight and what kind of tires youre using. Mountain bike tires drag like shit, hybrid tires are a little bit better but road tire's are incredibly good as long as youre watching out for shit. and get a lining of some sort on the inside to protect from punctures.

Yeah, 'cause the thickness and shape of tire treads have nothing to do with efficiency.
