Mouthgaurds, the kind used for people who grind their teeth at night. Anyone have experience with these?
I've got an obvious case of TMJ and I was checked for signs of teeth grinding, but the dentist didn't find any evidence of it. Nonetheless, they still want me to try using the mouthgaurd.
So I bought one for $35. I kind of like it actually. It gives me an excuse to bite down hard, which I love to do.

tl;dr share experience with mouthgaurds please

i had a splint made for my TMJ problem, general mouthguards didnt realy help for me

I wear this 24/7 and another that keeps my teeth apart at night, you should also try relaxing your jaw as much as possible, biting down hard on it will just make it hurtmoar

Well see I don't experience pain. The issue is more of a misalignment of some sort. I physically can't open and close my jaw in a straight direction, and it pops anytime I try. I can make it pop over and over anytime.
My insurance doesn't cover anything for TMJ. The dentist told me a mouthgaurd made by him costs $800, and I don't have that.
This is more of an attempt to prevent it from getting worse to the point where it will someday hurt.

It's like the mouthgaurd actually encourages me to bite. All I want to do it bite it hard forever. I'll only stop if my jaw muscles get tired.
I've only just bought it and I'm really just sitting around wearing it, so I can't say I'll actually sleep like that. But I probably would.

I had that shit. but when I opened my mouth I had the popping thing. didnt really bother me but I went to the ol' doctor who said I should rest my jaw, refrain from chewing gum or hard stuff. and possibly wear a mouthgard at nightime. I didn't chew gum or anything for ages and one day I just found the clicking jaw had stopped.

See, I love biting and chewing things. It's like some sort of stress relief. I love sugarfree gum. I love beef jerky. I even bite through paper or plastic cups. I am a frequent destroyer of pens, pencils, and straws.
So in a way, I like this thing because it's like it's giving me my biting fix in a harmless way. Or is that a bad idea?

yep same thing happened with me, I had clicking/popping and minimal pain and if anything the mouthguard hurt more than helped, that is because I did what you did and bit into it alot

long story short THIS IS THE WORST PAIN I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY LIFE, AND MY DOCTOR SAID ONE GIRL WHO CAME TO HIM AFTER SHE HAD TWINS WAS THAT IT WAS WORSE, AND IT WAS LIKE HAVING A BABY IN HER FACE, CONSTANTLY. FFFFFFFFFFFFf

so yea, you should really, really watch what you do because your TM joint is on thin ice now and could start going nuts soon, driving you into chronic unbearable painun

Great, so sounds like I wasted $35 and I shouldn't use this? I donno, I'll just do what the dentist said to, but I'll mention it to him. I'll be seeing him soon anyway.
Thing is, I swear my jaw started going bad around the time my wisdom teeth were coming in. They were impacted.
Since then, I've had them removed and while my jaw is no better it hasn't been getting worse anymore.

Alright, at the least I'll stop with the constant clenching this thing makes me want to do. I may still do it occasionally unconsciously, but that's why it's there anyway.
I hope to use it not only when sleeping but also anytime I'm just sitting around the house. In fact, I think it may help with controlling my eating because I think 50% of the reason I eat when not hungry is just to do something with my mouth.
