I was looking at dumbells at Target today when I saw something called a "kettlebell" and a bunch of related workout DVDs.

Never heard of this before. Is it any good?
Packaging claims it's cardio and light weight training in one, which sounds pretty awesome to me...

Looks a little gimmicky.

kb's are full of fucking win. that's what real pros use, all the time, better than db's. get the heaviest one you can
>> eBookGuy !3GqYIJ3Obs
They're good but they're not as full of win as some would make out. If you're going to get some here's an eBook to look at:

I can't tell if this is gimmicky or not. It looks interesting but if it is good I don't know why I haven't heard about it before.

Found a youtube vid of some guy showing some techniques:

dl'ing now.

well as far as i know they recruit more muscles and are heavier to lift at the same weights as dumbbells. that's enough for me. i don't use them myself however, db's seems enough. i don't have the space in my tiny ass place.

Acrobat keeps prompting me to download a plugin every time I try to open it. When I do, it just prompts me to download it again.

Any suggestions?
>> eBookGuy !3GqYIJ3Obs
They're really good for things like overhead pulls, upright rows, lateral raises (arms from your side to right out), shrugs, wrist flexing, probably best for triceps behind the head.

Any suggestions on beginning weight for someone who's just getting started in working out?

I'm basically a huge pussy who wants to tone up, and I don't want to buy equipment that's going to be too heavy for me to use properly...

Try that, the other thing doesn't work for me any more either, I bet it's Vista somehow...

I bought a 45 lb kettle bell a few months ago. Kept with it for a month, did different types of exercises with it every day on a routine, made a lot of improvements. It's not magical but it works just as well everything else does. It is a lot harder to use than a dumbell of equal weight due to its center of gravity being out of your hand.

It's easy to overtrain your arms with these though, I did. Took a little while to get back together.

What do you mean, "overtrain"?
I'm the huge pussy from>>66665so I'm thinking about starting with just a 20lb kettlebell and seeing how that goes.
I tend to get very bored just doing reps with dumbells, so I'm hoping this will shake things up a bit and make it a little more interesting...

tie them to your balls and do pullups

Kettlebells are fucking expensive. They are a great tool, but they aren't a replacement for the barbell, pull-up bar, or dumbbell. As long as you realize this, then the KB can be your friend!

there's a new exercise "regimen"/philosophy out now called Crossfit.

A lot of the techniques use kettleballs because they are unconventional movements.

crossfit fuckin rocks...get a kettlebell if you do that but otherwise they are kinda a waste...especially dvds we has internets now.

Holy fucking shit. DO NOT buy that shit. If your kettlebell says pounds, get the fuck away from it. Kettlebells that arn't heavy and russian arn't kettlebells. I got one from muscledriver and it's pretty good but rather get one from dragondoor (way too fucking expensive). Just learn to do dumbbell snatches for fuck's sake.

>>66662

You post ETK and then you say all that gay shit? Do you read the shit you post? You still get one free internets for the upload, though.

>>66782

What the hell are you using it for? If you're doing snatches, C&P's, swings, TGU's, the shit they are designed to do; then you will never overtrain with it.

FUCK.

>If your kettlebell says pounds, get the fuck away from it. Kettlebells that arn't heavy and russian arn't kettlebells.

It's a lump of iron with a handle, not a fucking fashion statement.
Who gives a shit where it's manufactured?

i can't see this being somehow inherently superior to other types of freeweights

>>66934

Crossfit sounds great if you have endless free time, but otherwise... I dunno, sounds very time intensive, and very, very expensive...

not superior just... different. allow for different kinds of workout and more freedom. good for change of pace.

i bet those giant tires get expensive

Kettlebell should only be used by someone thats not a newbie in weights.you don't know how to work with them so they are pretty useless

>Kettlebell should only be used by someone thats not a newbie in weights.

>>66665here and definitely a total newbie for weights, what would you suggest for starting and home-use?
The kettlebells I saw appealed to me because they're relatively small and they come with workout DVDs. The few times I've tried weight training I've gotten bored really quickly, so following along with a video seems like a good idea...

Kettlebells rock.

Guess who uses kettlebells ? This man is the greatest boxer of our time.

Basically anything you can do with a KB you can do with an adjustable dumbbell.
>> Anonymous
>>67627

I saw some guy holding the handle in his palm with the kettle part behind his hand and doing behind his back lifts. Seems like it'd be a hell of a lot more difficult with normal dumbells...

... do not i stress.. do NOT get the heaviest one you can get.. or the one's at target. i am a personal trainer and work almost exclusively with kb's... go to www.dragondoor.com for info.. but for your best buy on a good and appropriately balanced kb... either muscledriver.com or performbetter.com . the dragondoor website will give you alot of info, but do your homework on them... they are extremely effective, but need to be respected or can cause problems.

>>67576
your kb can say lbs, kg, or poods (original way to measure the kb in Russian weights).. it all comes out to the same when converted. 1pood =16.38kg=36.11lbs.... Just to the person that wants to be "traditional" then get the one in kg... poods are really only used when talking about them...

(same poster from recomending not to get the heaviest kb)..

Hey, does anyone know what weight kettlebells someone weighing in the 175-190 area at 5'11" benching 265 should use? I normally use 50-70 lb dumbells for that sort of stuff.

i was thinking the heaviest that can **be lifted for 3x12 times**. just wanted to be short and to the point. take this trainer's word over mine. i've barely ever touched a kb>>67639
