It'd be hard to hit your target for "bulk" calories on only 3 meals a day also, I bet. You constantly need to introduce amino acids into your blood stream to ensure that your body will rebuild its damaged muscle fibres, or you risk overfeeding and not properly absorbing the nutrients or going into a catabolic state.
It's very anal retentive and stupid but if you want the best gains it's a must.
