whats the difference between narrow and widegrip pullups? also when I am doing a pullup should my elbows be pointing infront of my body or out to the sides?

wide grip PULLUPS don't make you wider FFS

Just try doing both narrow and wide and see which recruits your lats more. But regardless you should vary your grip in all ways possible.
