ITT: How to convince people to be fit. Anonymous
Too many people I know are out of shape, don't do anything to stay in shape, and resent physical activity. They don't watch what they eat, they are ignorant of how health/fitness works, and I think they are wallowing in their own self pity. I want to convince these people to become fit and healthy. How can I do this? Has anonymous done anything like this before? Has anonymous had an experience of being convinced to become fit and take responsibility for their own health? Share your stories with us.

So I woke up and started running.

I guess it just depends on the person. I had a conversation with a friend of mine who was into fitness. Him: "Why are you eating fries?"
Me: "Because potatoes are high in cals and carbs?"
Him: "Once you fry anything, it loses its nutritional value"

After that I stopped eating fried food all together. Oh, and I was trying to put on weight at the time. I've tried telling that to other people and they tell me, "But it tastes sooo good!" and they eat it anyway. When someone tells me something about it tasting good, I usually compare it to drugs or something. "I bet *insert drug here* tastes great, doesnt mean im going to do it" obviously wont work if the person your talking to is doing drugs :)

Because I've been depressed for years and the only time I've felt great was when I worked out almost every day and was shredded. Also, to not be fat like the rest of my family, get diabettus, and for the bitches
>> Anonymous
All my family members are severly overweight, I'm the only one with a relatively normal body weight. I don't want Type II Diabetes like my Dad, or the ankle problems my Mom has because her legs have trouble supporting her own weight. I don't want to be like them and huff when I go up stairs and or walk a mile and say it's my weekly exercise.

I guess. For me it's more because all [or mostly all] of my friends are super skinny and I was tired of being the fat one. It's a tedious process, but I look at all the girls in super tight shirts and fat spilling all over the place and it makes me work harder. I definitely need to walk more though.

I enjoy being "the fitness guy". If every one of my friends was like me, then I wouldnt get as much satisfaction out of it.

What made me want to become fit was seeing a clone of myself at the time--- A lazy and fat weeaboo.

That was 3 years ago.

When did you start out on becoming the fitness guy? How old were you? How old are you now? How long did it take?

Let them die. Eventually they will decompose to a healthy body weight. But seriously, eventually you'll realize that you can't convince people to do shit about their lives. They have to convince themselves. That's one reason that fat people who clearly aren't happy bug me. They have all these issues and you try to be a friend and attempt to give them advice or invite them to do something that will be progressive in their miserable lives. They can't be bother to do anything but complain and continue to be miserable though. It's just a little annoying is all.
>> Anonymous
>>270713

It was the summer of '05- I 'd just turned 16. I was 5'10", 170 lbs, and was 24% body fat. The first year was the easiest, oddly enough. By my next birthday I was down to 130lbs, looking annorexic, as everyone would say. This was done by cutting out 90% of all crap foods and replacing them with healthier choices. I still spoiled myself every once in a while.

Year 2 I did a lot of weight training, mainly bodyweight and using those elastic bands. iwantsixpackabs.com helped a ton.

By then I was the fitness guy and this year all I did was more of the same. Started doing marathon biking and going to the gym.
>> Anonymous
>>270709
OMG. FUCKING SECONDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's sometimes annoying just how sedentary some of my nerdy friends are. That's the only fallback to being the /fit/ guy.

>They have all these issues and you try to be a friend and attempt to give them advice or invite them to do something that will be progressive in their miserable lives.
I think it's the admission of the problem... or acknowledging the problem that brings shame. So the thought of doing something like that makes them insecure. So it's always "no."
>> Anonymous
>>270736
It's when they know they have a problem. They complain about shit all the time, like my one friend is borderline diabetic and has asthma because of his weight (which is what he told me, I didn't even know asthma worked like that). Then when me and another friend would go walk somewhere because we were sick of sitting in the dorm, he'd rather play diablo 2 for another 10hrs straight. Fine, whatever. But when he starts to talk down on physical activity I rage. Seriously. That's another thing, why the fuck do fat people take issue with people who enjoy working out. Meathead this, and what's the point that. Well guess what fatass, when I'm at your funeral because you fucking died of heart disease, I'll let you know what the point is. DON'T BITCH ABOUT THE BUILDING HAVING TOO MANY STEPS WHEN YOU SIT DOWN 80% OF THE FUCKING DAY!!!!

Sorry about the rage induced rant.

Lots of people ask me, and when i answer the vast majority come under a few categories.

1. "Oh I don't want to get too big" Yea like you're going to uncontrollably explode with muscles overnight, Pussy Class A.

2. "Oh I don't have the time for all that" shut the fuck up, you're not busy or important, find 40 minutes to an hour and workout. pack your meals the night before... Lazy Prick Class A

3. "I just want...X" No there isn't a 2 minute solution to your underarm fat, or your lower abs, or your tiny legs. You must train. Lazy Pussy Class A

>pack your meals the night before... Lazy Prick Class A
Do people who pack their meals the night before do cooking and then refrigerated? Or what do they do? And do they take their cooking to work? How does this work? Teach me please.
>> Anonymous
>>271132

Packing meals the night before gives you time to plan what you are going to eat. A big excuse for people who eat crap food is "I just eat what's available at work/school", guess what, most of that food is garbage. Buy your own food, prepare your own meals. PLAN how much and what you're going to eat, and STICK TO IT.
>> Anonymous
>>271132
me personally i cook the night before then pack.

or maybe my meals dont need cooking, turkey sandwich and frozen bag of vegetables and im out the door
>> Anonymous
Is there a benefit to making/planning your food the night before when you're trying to GAIN weight?
>> Anonymous
Man, I really need to learn to cook, right now I try to buy a sandwich from the local cafe or something when I'm at uni.
>>271306
If you want to gain weight, you still don't want the crap you get from heavily processed foods, like hydrogenated fats that's in frying oil, which are very good at sticking to your arteries, not to mention the lack of nutritional value of cheap fried foods. You should really try to prefer protiens over fats when gaining weight, and try to make the extra weight muscle because it's denser than fat and so you still appear slimmer.
>> Anonymous
>>271321
OK. I fry my eggs in olive oil. Should I stop frying my eggs? How should I be cooking them? I don't eat fast food, generally don't eat junk food (It's very rare for me to do that), I don't drink soda (I've never liked it). I eat things like sandwiches, soups, eggs, fruits, milk, nuts, oatmeal, cereals, chicken, rice, and occasionally something that I happen to find in the freezer that I can just heat up. Would I still be able to get a benefit in preparing things/planning things before? I suppose that would help me to eat more often, and to eat more... but I don't see how it would improve my diet.

So then I picked a good oil to cook my eggs in? I'm not understanding what you're saying, but I'll go research some time this week.
>> Anonymous
Olive oil is one of the WORST to fry with.

It's a shame that people got told a half-truth without understanding what it all means.

On this list>>272678, the best to fry with would be either the top or bottom.

Saturated fat is the most stable, and doesn't oxidise like polyunsaturated fats (which olive oil has lots of). Oxidated polyunsats are likely a large part of heart disease.
Olive oil's benefits come when it's consumed unheated.

Well this thread sorta of made me realize how fat and weak I am. If I think about it I sit on the pc most of the day(at work at home) and only get like two and a half hours of working out a week and I refuse to diet because I am just too lazy to count things and blaming it all on the fact that I am pretty skinny and dont have fat to loose to gain muscles (which is fucking illogical in the first place (187 , 73kg 21% body fat)) but I guess all thanks to this thread this will change, I am going for a run now, thanks.

bad news: when Teflon is heated sadly, it reacts and gases. I don't want Teflon gas in any food. Professional chefs do not use Teflon coated shit pans in hotels around the world. Just admit it, you're addicted to fast food. bake it you fucker. Or steam it. or eat it raw, depending which food it is.

You can get a lovely Lodge cast iron pan for cheapz on Amazon, it takes a bit of maintenance with the cleaning and oiling after you're done but it's so nice, the cast iron gives steady, even heating. As a bonus, you can also pop it into the oven because it has no melty burny bits.

I don't have a direct source. My apologies. I have a best guess.

Manual of Clinical Dietetics, American Dietetics Association. (ADA) (2000). Chicago, IL.

some useless shit that says why of this manual is worth anything:
In Dietetics, in Canada and the USA, this is our professional manual. It recognizes the Mediterranean diet as being associated with a greatly reduced risk of Myocardial infarction and cardiovascular related mortality, due to the evidence from epidemiological and intervention research. The risk reduction is about 70%, according to the ADA’s analysis. The Mediterranean diet received a lot of attention in the scientific community, partly because it involves a current subject base. The past, is sadly not examined with nearly as much scrutiny, although to do so would give Americans better clues on why heart disease is the number one contributor to mortality. The American diet of the the early 1900’s, like the Mediterranean diet, is also associated with greatly improved heart health. Many Doctors practicing then would go years without seeing a heart attack patient, or an angina patient.

and the last useless shit is this and that's it. I know it doesn't directly answer it, this is copypasta, and that reference is the closest citation. of course it's paid for shit when I google so I guess that's the end of that. Again I apologize:

Those who have studied fats in a biochemical context will know that polyunsaturates are the most unstable class of fats, and that oxidized polyunsaturates catalyse the peroxidation of other polyunsaturates. In other words, a bit of bad fat ruins ALL the surrounding fat, in a short time. Refining of our ‘edible’ oils involves high heat, which causes oxidation (and polymerization) in delicate polyunsaturates. Corn, soy, safflower, sunflower, and canola, our most popular ‘vegetable’ oils, are mostly polyunsaturated. This knowledge is not in any way obscure, but how many of us consider the meaning of it, and realise that most vegetable oils are rancid, overprocessed, and unsafe in our bodies?? See the end of this article for truly healthy, safe fats.

>>273414
oh what the hell. I may as well finish what I started.

Canola is hybridized from rapeseed oil. It is a new fat in the human diet. It is not at all proven in long term research to be safe for us. We have thousands of year’s history consuming olive oil, and many hundreds, if not thousands, consuming palm and coconut oils. The Wall Street Journal reported that workers frying with rapeseed oil were found to have excessive rates of lung cancer, which appears to point to danger from inhalation of this junk oil. Wall Street Journal, June 7, 1995, p. B6.

Wow, you people really are the biggest self-righteous pricks I've ever seen. You aren't any better than anybody else just because you work out. I mean, Christ, I work out too, but I'm humble. Get some values and learn to live with everyone else in society instead of being so arrogant. It isn't your job to be telling other people that they need to subscribe to your lifestyle and be exactly like you. In fact, that's nobody's job.

I've never met more shallow scumbags than the people on this board. It's no wonder that right after these threads where you all lay into fat people that we threads about "I'M TOTALLY IN THE BEST SHAPE BUT I CAN'T GET A GIRLFRIEND HOW COME THEY WON'T GET WITH ME?", the answer is because you're an arrogant, annoying little prick with no personality whatsoever.

I HAVE done it. I know this sounds lame, but I started exercising as a child. Since English isn't my first language, but my mom was English and we weren't living in an English-speaking country because of my father, my mother always bought me English books... mostly comic books. So from a young age, I wanted to be able to look just like Superman or be able to lift tons of weight like Captain America or stuff like that.

Once I got older and learned that being healthy like that also came with benefits, it didn't seem logical to stay that way. I just have this incurable drive to be fit and healthy and the best I can be.

Now, I have three friends who are incredibly big and eat all the time... all kinds of things, whatever they want. I hang out with them almost all the time and we take tons of pictures so they always see pictures from my bulking and cutting phases.

This way, by showing them that it IS possible, that eating properly and less combined with exercising DOES help, CAN make them thin, and WILL if they wait long enough, I convinced each of them to start dieting a bit more and exercise.
I tell them to exercise with me. My workouts take maybe 2 hours now, but hey, at least they are going to the gym now.
And there ARE results. No, none of them look like me or Arnold Schwarzenegger, but they are getting stronger, getting more endurance, and losing pounds slowly... and they notice, too.
And as long as I continually have the drive, they'll eventually develop it once they realize it fully, too.
