Press ups. What am I doing wrong /fit?

I'm strong with a large build, slightly heavy, but not fat.

I can do 5-10 press up's, after that my hands start to hurt forcing me to stop.

Do I have the wrong technique? or will I get better after so many reps?

I have promised myself; I will master the pressup.

Anything i should take on board?

What kind of hand pain? Like wrists?

Try knuckle push-ups or using 2 dumbbells and grip them to do push-ups.

If you can't do either of those, you may be forced to get new hands dude.

nah, my hands are fine

i believe it might be my wrist-joints or something

or pushups generally a hard exercise? i'm un/fit/ trying to get /fit/, is 5-10 normal to start out? my friends can do like 50 on the spot...

Yes, if you aren't used to it. You should be able to see big improvements in numbers in a short while. If that doesn't work, try push up bars.

It depends on how little exercise you've been doing over the period of the last few years and how much you weigh.

If you seriously haven't had much physical activity and are fairly to significantly over-weight - yeah push-ups can be difficult.

However, if it's joint pain...try the 2 things suggested earlier. If you can't do many of those, you might have to resort to other methods of strengthening those muscle groups.

I have been active, but I wouldn't say i was fit.

While i was 'active' i never cared about pressup's untill now.

I hope you guys are right, and these short rep's pay off! :/

They do don't worry. I started at around 7-8 now i'm on 50 after a couple of weeks.
But if its in the joint don't over work it, you could do some damage.

Yes, also, do them slowly, 3-4 count down and the same up.

ok, great.

So push up's provide a good workout yeah? Since they're so hard for me right now, I like the fact im slowly working towards a target.

I'll have massive strength on my shoulders/arms eventually?

They do build strength, but after a while it just turns into an endurance exercise. So you can add a weighted vest/backpack to make you stronger, rather than trying to add hundreds more reps.

i can do press ups better than push ups. cuz when i first started doin pushups, i was actually doing press ups and thinking those were pushups. now i can do 100+ press ups but only 60-65 pushups. i think im doin it wrong

I'm a heavy 235 pound 6'2 white male, and I can almost do 20 push-ups... because I'm fly like that.

All the way to the bottom man...

the closer you put your hands to your body and the closer they are to your hips, the harder the press up and the better the reward
