Dear medical practitioners of /fit/. A week ago Saturday I was skateboarding. This was my first session since October. I was all stoked to be back on my board again. I warmed up as anyone would not skateboarding in months. After that I was feeling good so I decided to ollie off the quarter pipe. I've done this many many times, in the summer I was ollieing the quarter pipe everyday. Its 5 feet high. Anyways I wasn't expecting to land it first try, so I just kind of based into the ground a few times. I was getting kinda sore so I decided to only give it a few more tries. I went, I ollied, my back foot was too far off the board and my back foot slipped off on landing. Instead of just falling off my front foot stayed on, I quickly was stretched, as far as in the splits my long legs can go, then my knee bent. Not in the bending sense and a hinge does, but in the bending sense as bending to the right, instead of bending up or down. I really don't know how to explain this, but it bend in the way it shouldn't. It is incredibly painful, and not getting better, only worst.

I am kind of thinking it is an ACL tear, but I really don't want it to be. Any thoughts?

It is an ACL Tear. I'm sorry, but you're going to be one of 36,000 NCAA Student Athletes going pro in something other than sports.

Have you been to the doctor yet?

A week and 2 days? You truly are a skater aren't you? Too stupid for your own good.

No. I haven't been to the doc, yet. I hate going, mainly because it take forever to get in because everyone goes for the littlest shit, because our health care is free.

does it hurt when you move normally nowadays?

-incoming PT, i can probably help determine the problem

because i think that it's either a meniscal injury or an ACL tear. probably the 1st one if it still hurts. the 2nd one if the shinbone is moving forward excessively

Yeah it does hurt when I move it. It stiffens up quickly and usually makes me buckle when I stand up after sitting for a long time. How would I check if the shinbone is moving forward too much?

Thanks for the help.

Were you able to put weight on it right after you injured your knee? I tore my ACL a while back, and I could not put any weight whatsoever on the leg. Typically, ACL tears are either fully torn or not at all, so if you could walk afterwards (even if it was painful), then you probably didn't tear it.

But I'd still go to see an orthopedic doctor (like a specialized sports knee doctor) if possible, as you might've ripped up the cartilage pretty bad or even torn the MCL or something else.

listen to this man, he speaks truth... student athletic trainer here... from what it sounds like i'd guess MCL... though text doesn't count for an evaluation

tl;dr - see a doc, urgent care, or orthopod (don't go to/clog the emergency room though)
