>>55587 derr, power is not killing power.. obv to be a good fighter you have to fight and what you lift is pretty much irrelevant. Nobody is saying a guy who can squat 6 plates can kill anyone, he is just strong- like a horse pulling a cart is strong, its just a quality, like a person who wears glasses is short or long sighted, or someone who likes the taste of butter, or people who read books.
many of the guys on here are either underweight or overweight, so to get to a healthy balance some chose to lift weights, because you can build mass and reduce fat, there are other alternatives of course, but this is what some choose to do. The side effect of big compound lifts is strength, mostly core and lower body strength. As an aside, a lot of physical sports require good core strength and stability, so some lift weights to benefit them in a sporting endeavor.
Like you said it is a hobby, but if you do it half assed you won't see great results, so for many people it becomes a way of life- since its a hobby on how you eat, train and sleep. In the end it's probably a testosterone/ego thing you wont ever understand- not to compare yourself to others, but to push your own body to its natural limits.
Why become a runner when you can drive a car. Why read the book when you can watch the movie. Why live at all when you are going to eventually die.
