/fit/ started new workout routine last week, 60 min/4 mile fast paced walk 4 days a week. Now I'm getting really bad blisters on the bottoms of my feet. What do I do?

I used to get blisters when I jogged. Either get better shoes suited to your feet, or you can try wearing thin socks. It sounds weird but that worked for me.

Oh I should add, make sure they are SYNTHETIC socks. It slipped my mind but it's important.

work through the pain?
Your feet will toughen up sooner or later right?

That was my plan, but today one of 'em broke open and now I have a huge patch of raw skin that hurts whenever I walk, I really hope it's healed enough to go to the gym tomorrow.

You may have to rest a day or so for the skin to toughen up. Reduce the amount of "friction" workouts (walking/jogging) and sub in "stationary " workouts (biking/eliptical). After a while, calluses will form. You'll be back to walking in no time.

Do this. If you keep going with blisters it will get worse; best to pop them as soon as they appear then rest as much as possible until they heal.

finally a blister that's ok to pop

Let it heals, and double up on socks. Also, better shoes.

your shoes are too big or too small

Get yourself to a quality shoe store, and have them watch (asses) your gait cycle. Ask for speed/normal walking shoes and NOT running shoes. The heel-toe transition and lateral posterior crash pad on both shoes is NOT the same.

Rest is important to not only the feet, but to higher up structures as well. Your knees and hips will thank you.

As for dealing with blisters, it is o.k. to lance them, but do not rip off the skin. Leave it in place and you wont be exposing the raw skin underneath to friction.

Hey, I've been doing the same thing, and I had been getting blisters, but they seemed to have slowed down. I had worn two pairs of socks for more cushion, then just got better shoes.

i get blisters a lot as i am on my feet all day working outdoors - but usually only if i wear the wrong socks! if your feet get really sweaty, and the socks are course - the skin gets softer from the moisture and then is rubbing on the sock - the fit of the shoe is an issue there as well (not much choice with work boots)
but good comfortable socks that wick sweat away are great.
