what does /fit/ think of ankle and wrist weights to be worn all the time during daily activity?

will it help at all or is it just a waste of time better spent on the track or in the gym
>> Anonymous
The most wearing these during normal daily activity will give is climbing stairs faster, not more, also say goodbye to your joints lol. NOT A GOOD IDEA.

it really will fuck your joints. i know dragonball z was cool and all, but it doesnt work that way.

if you want to do non active training, you need to wear a fully weighted suit, like a lead jacket or something. that way, you dont have stuff pulling your joints out of wack
>> sage
what about if they attach to the forearm or shin so the weight isn't on the joint?

But goku wore weighted clothes every day of his life and he lived to be over 170 and died with the physique of a ten year old body builder

I lol'ed.
And were Goku's pajama-type clothes weighted? I thought Gohan's Piccolo-style was, not Goku's.

Manga and Anime

* In Dragon Ball and the start of Dragon Ball Z, many of the characters wear weighted clothing as a form of training to increase their strength. Master Roshi wears a heavy-weighted turtle shell on his back, as do Goku and Kuririn during their time training with him, though they don't seem to continue doing it after. While this method of training is unknown in reality, it simulates training wearing heavy backpacks, and is far more sensible due to the round shape which would make rolling easier and deflects blows easier. In the world tournament Goku goes up against Tien Shinhan, to which he throws off his clothes which were weighted, he then gains in speed and power. In DBZ Goku and Piccolo hide weights in their karate gis. Removing the clothing visibly increased their power levels on Raditz' power level scanner. Later in the series, the characters use gravity-multiplying machines to train. By increasing their bodyweights, they no longer require cumbersome weighted clothing to train properly, as bodyweight movements suffice.

Thaaaat's right. Thanks. I haven't seen DBZ in FOREVER.
Man, I wish I had a gravity room to train in...

and they also apparently trained their organs to be stronger too

This is something I've never understood. How is having a pound of weight on an ankle more dangerous than 3 pounds of calf muscle?

I figure the ankle is ~3 times further from the knee than most of the calf muscle, so 1/3 the weight would result in ~equivalent strain.

I have chicken legs: almost a straight shot from heel to knee. If I develop 3 lbs of muscle, how is that being there less stressful than 1 lb @ the ankle.

I would never recommend all-day weight bearing for OTHER reasons, but I just don't understand the logic here.

If you develop 3 pounds of muscle on your calf other leg muscles will develop with it to balance and support your leg

its the unbalancing of artificial weight that damages joints
>> Anonymous
not worth it. if you wanna strengthen your legs, the leg press, squats and running will suffice.

I'm not entirely convinced.
Obviously an excessive strain will cause injury.
Obviously anybody who is zealous enough to even consider all-day weights will very quickly overdo it.
Not to mention that many people will underestimate the force provided by a small mass located a huge distance from the fulcrum (triple distance balance by 1/3 weight)

But I suppose the human body is not *meant* for *continuous* strain, which is inviting injury even for the non zealous.

OOooooooohhhhhh. I think I get it now.

I wore a weighted belt and vest under a hoodie for a week while training. When I took them off at the end of the week and ran I felt like I was fucking flying. I was mistepping a bit because I was litterally jumping a bit in my stride.

They work but try to keep the weight at the core of the body. That way it's just like you put on 10 or 20 lbs and you're working it off intead of it feeling like you're constantly lifting weights.

I used weights when I was back in grade school. I wore them while at school and in a small school stairs are everywhere.

There were no permanent issues as far as I can tell and I suffer very little pain in my knees if any but I've had other injuries.

From my experience though if you want really strong legs try skipping rope, running a lot, and any amount of squats, toe raises, ham curls.

Building muscle and losing weight are questions that get asked all the time but the truth is no weird tool (ankle weights, ab roller) or gimmick gets the job done as well as just plain exercise and workin out, and ofcourse watching diet helps but you can totally stuff the shit out of your face if you just do enough cardio to balance it out.

20 minutes of cardio a day and you can eat like a fuckin pig anyway. most people are just lazy as shit

vest is completely different then ankle weights.

I like the idea simply because the feeling of removing them must be awesome.

Fuck yes I love this feeling. After like an hour and a half of jogging you can like fly up a staircase.
