you actually got the idea rather correct. mussels only pull, but w/the abs, think of roughly 3 different mussels all layered on top, pulling in 3 different directions (planes xyz), so together, it makes them strong, captain planet style. (rectus, TVA, and int/ext obliques) look up gray's anatomy online to see their attachments, altho it d/n matter for your needs.
just know that abs are primarily designed as ANTI ROTATORS of the spine. program your work around that paradigm and all will be well
(ie. crunches suck, standing ab wheel rollouts/gymnastic ab progressions/squating/deadlifting are good)
