the hardest thing about long-distance running imo is getting to your "runner's high" euphoria. The first distance (it always seemed like the first two miles for me!) will have you feeling like keeling over and puking, laying down and dieing, blood-turned-to-battery-acid, etc, but if you can push past that and get to where your body releases those chemicals for the long-haul, you're mostly good. (Granted, it still hurts, and still sucks, but it's a LOT easier stress-wise imo)
personally i've got another season of rugby coming up, but also have a triathlon in the spring that i'm going to have to be ready for, so the muscle-type change-over will be interesting when the new year comes!
