I've never been into exercise but I want to start working out. I've got a lot of free time that I want to spend on something constructive. My diet is pretty shit but that's a whole 'nother story. I just wanted to ask you guys what I should get (i.e. hand weights, etc) and what I should do with them (i.e. best exercises to do).

I don't wanna be a bodybuilder, I just want to look better than I do now, which is really skinny/no muscle.

Thanks for any advice

What if I can't get to a Gym?
>> Anonymous
only read the parts in starting strength that "teach how to do this exercise" and then do stronglifts
>> Anonymous
start off with some pushups, situps, squatz and chinups
Even if you only get one chin up done. It's better than none :-) but I started again 3weeks ago and I have gone from one to 8 chinups a day. All the other exercises have also increased

Simple: do a little bit each day and you will see results in a month :D

This, or something like it, and about 300lbs of weight is all you need. Period.

If you want to buy something, buy a power rack, and an adjustable bench.
