I went from a resting heart rate of 80 (last year) to a current resting heart rate of 49. I lost around 30 lbs and went from a 15 minute mile to an 8 minute mile. What does this mean /fit/?

Errr! Wrong. Lowest resting heart rate ever was 28 bpm (Miguel Indurain, a cyclist and five time Tour de France winner).

A resting heart rate of 49 is technically bradycardia, which isn't really dangerous.

My resting heart rate is between 42 and 48 bpm at 245lbs.

48 here. Among other things I cycle twice a week for 40mins, train for 1 hour and cycle back 40mins. Average heart rate on the cycling is always somewhere around 160, highest was 165.

This is likely to be a stupid question due to the use of the word 'resting', however if I record my heart rate as soon as I wake up, is this accurate?

It's very good. The slower you heart rate, the better. Higher RHR means it is working harder and that is not good for the heart. Of course, be logical. If your heart rate is drpping to 20 bpm then maybe you've got a problem. However, there are many variables to this as well. Some people just naturally have high BPM. Lowest I ever recorded mine was 60 and i exercise quite frequently. Some people I know never workout, are fat and out of shape and have a resting heart rate of 40.

Definatley keep up the good work, seems like you're really working yourself into good health.
