How long should it take me to run a mile? Anonymous
Denizens of /fit/, what do you think a decent mile time is for a 23 year old male? (5'8" 160lbs) Right now I do it in about 8:30 but it's in my neighborhood so it's an uphill/downhill kind of thing. I think my time would be better on a track. Not drastically so, but at least under 8 minutes.

I've been jogging for about a week now and have improved both my run time and recovery time.

i think in terms of "fight or flight". when in flight mode you need to be concerned with not only how fast you can get away, but how long you can sustain that movement. animals like the hyena will chase you till you give up, even if they cant catch you outright.

And this has nothing to do with fight or flight. When you're running a marathon you run in an incredibly conservative way. When you're trying to pull off a 6 minute mile, you don't...

and if you need to outrun the blackees who are used to outrunning hyenas, shouldnt you be training in the same method they train? otherwise you'll be like the untrained blackee. exhausted, caught, consumed.

also, what's wrong with combining the two methods? train to run fast for a good distance? isnt that what endurance is all about?

If you don't consider the PCT "actual hiking" then what do you? Sure it doesn't involve class 4 or 5 technical climbing, but it winds through most of the Sierras and Cascades.

As a climber and mountaineer from California, I've been on many parts of the PCT (especially the bits in Yosemite) and I'm in awe of people who actually finish the entire PCT.

I wouldn't concentrate on getting a fast mile down, but you should be able to keep an 8 minute mile pace down for at least 6-8 miles. If you are reaching for a fast mile, 5:30 would probably be enough. You're also going to need to force your body to preserve water well for that ~35 mile stretch with no access to water.

You also probably don't need to train like this, but the idea of running a marathon shouldn't be scary if you want to do the PCT.

Thank you sir. Very good information. One of my goals on my way to reaching a point where I can hike the PCT will be to do a marathon.
