And yes, it is actually possible to want to run without a shirt because it's more comfortable, not to show off. I'm not saying that's the reason for everyone, but it's definitely the reason for some people.
Most of the people in this thread, and pretty much this board, are interested in fitness for aesthetic reasons. OP assumes that shirtless runners are doing it to look good (and hence are douches) while he worries about a farmer's tan. Other people are claiming "I look good so I can do it" leading to other people claiming "everyone who does it wants to look good."
Fitness can be about a health, competition, or personal achievement. Don't assume that because this isn't what fitness means for you that everyone agrees. It's not a revelation that people exercising may want as few layers as possible if they're going to be sweating.
