I'm worried, /fit/.

I've started cycling and my knees really fucking hurt. I figured that if it was just generic stiffness that other parts of my legs would hurt as well, but it's just the joints.

Maybe I'm being paranoid. I just want to be able to walk for another fifty years or so.

Check how high you have adjusted your seat it may not be high enough. You neeed to get good leg extension, right before the point of starting to lock your leg straight. You will have better posture this way, more pedaling power, and a better workout.
