So recently I've only been doing straight-leg deadlifts. Don't really use my legs at all (my mentality being squats = legs, deadlifts = lower back)

My friend told me this would fuck up my back. Should I do sumo deadlifts or another variation which requires use of legs, or is my friend a dumbshit and I'm perfectly fine? Assume I have correct form and all that jazz.

And yes, I know SQUATZ and deadlifts work everything, not just legs/lower back.

depends if you round your lower back or not. deadlifts with a rounded lower back can put a lot of stress on your spine

You should be using your legs slightly. Even RDLs and SLDLs use the hams a bit, but as long as you use correct form then you should be fine.

I'd be careful about creating muscular imbalance though.

you're not really lifting it with your back
the straight leg deadlift is basically hip extension and the spinal erectors can't extend the hip
