Hey /fit/
Maybe you get a lot of threads like this but here it is anyway...

I'm off school for the spring/summer and I want to start working out so I can be more familiar with it when I go back in September.

I'll be busy then and so working out less but right now I'm really intimidated about getting started cause I've never worked out before in my life.

I'm out of shape but not fat (only a hair overweight according to my physician) and the main reason I want to work out is not about body image. I want to relieve stress and improve my overall health. I'm only 23 now but as I said out of shape. I figure the sooner I get off my ass and start thinking about my heart the better.

I have access to my school's gym included in my tuition over the summers and while I complete my program for the next few years. Apprehensive about the gym so far because I'm afraid I won't know what to do and waste a lot of time (and look like a newfag)
But I'm learning from reading a bit here now that maybe that's not where I should be starting.

How can I get started /fit/?

I would first suggest cardio. Having good endurance would probably improve your overall conditioning. If you're into swimming at all, I would definitely go for that. It hits a lot of muscles at once and you can work as much or as little as you want.

I don't really see a line between conditioning for overall health and muscle mass. In exercising, you will be generating muscle. You'll just be doing less weight than others if you're starting out. Anyway, keep a record of what exercises you do and test out what your limits are. Generally, you would want to be doing 3 sets of 10 reps of a particular weight. If you're overexerting yourself for that, then you're pushing too much weight.

If you want to get started on weights, here is a ton of info for a beginner:

If you're more into distance running/swimming/whatever just make goals, pick out a program and stick to it. Start a training log. And it's good that you're doing some research now because if you just show up and are unsure of what you want to do then you'll just end up dicking around with no real results.

Thanks for the advice :)

What's the main purpose of keeping a log/record?
