Winter Running Anonymous
This is my first year of getting fit so its also my first winter aswell.

How do /fit/ runners deal with the cold weather, I can't manage much before I get pains in my chest which forces me to stop but I wonder if I should just carry on through it. I dress well for the cold, not too many clothes but I still get the pains in my throat and chest.

Any tips?

Damn OP, I love running in cold weather. Its like I'm getting tons of energy from the weather. I also hear that cold weather can make you lose faster weight because your body is trying to heat itself more, thus burning more calories.

Maybe its the way your breathing?
Try breathing in from your nose, then exhale from your mouth. Try that cycle. Or heck, just breath from your nose.

Does it feel like a sore throat or something?

Try breathing in through your nose, out through your mouth.

I have crushed cartilage in my nose, so I am a semi-mouthbreather (lawl), so I sometimes have the same problem.

Try getting a neck gaiter and pulling it up over your nose and mouth to alleviate the chill.

I thought it was my breathing, I start well then go into a shallow pant. Was ok during the summer and autumn but I'll change my habits to run through the winter also.

Thanks!

>>420197is right, your body burns more calories to keep warm. Probably one of the quickest ways to lose weight is to go outside for an extended period of time in very cold weather with very little clothing. NOT GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH, but in theory it would work.

Anyway, OP, TIGHTS ARE YOUR FRIEND. Obviously wear something over then (unless you're a really fucking hot girl), but they're fucking awesome. My lifesavers for winter running are my coldgear underarmour turtleneck and my underarmour tights. Warmup pants or shorts go over the tights, and a fleece (or soft shell jacket in extreme cold) goes over my top. Complete with hat and gloves in really fucking cold weather.

Sounds like you have rhythm problems, too. Tricky to get down. Depending on the size of your lungs and your pace, try some different things. When I ran in high school, it was an inhale per two steps, then an exhale per two steps.

Now I'm 35 pounds heavier, and I have to do 3 steps to an inhale, 2 to exhale.

Mess around with it, find something that works for you. Happy running.

Very true. I have been to Russia during the winter. Just by walkingl outside for the whole day I lost a SIGNIFICANT amount of weight. And I wore adequate clothing too

(by adequate of course I do not mean stuffing yourselves up like you are going to the South Pole or anything, just enough to walk outside for hours without feeling sick).

if you're talking about the burning/freezing feel in your throat, you need to slow down some, and then once you get that down, work up your speed.

I forgot to mention this has fuck all to do with your breathing problem, just dressing for cold weather in general.

I'd say you have emphysema and you're going to die. That's my best guess.

Whenever I run in the cold, I get a runny nose in the first few minutes and can't breathe with my nose for the rest of the run. Do you have any specific ways to deal with this?

In all cases it is recommended to do as rocky does.

Benzedrine inhalers. stash a dozen or so in the pocket of your jacket. for extra fast use, just take the little felt strip out and eat it. You don't even have to worry about inhaling it.

I think I remember hearing that for some people their capillaries, I think thats what its called, in their nose get enlarged because of the increased blood flow from the exercises that they are doing.

Your heart is beating faster, which is pumping blood through your system faster as well. This causes your capillaries to enlarge to sustain the increased amount of blood flow.

Some people have some problems with this because, like say, during sex, many begin to sneeze erratically which makes sex suck for them.

So as you start running, you heat up causing your runny nose. But I'm sure if you stop and cool down, you dont have a runny nose anymore right?

Anyways, someone might have to correct me cause I'm not sure if i got the right term down.
