I don't personally recommend it if your interest is overall health or self-defense. If boxing as a sport is your interest - go for it. If you want overall health, go take brazilian jiu jitsu. It's low impact, incredibly challenging, and you will get very fit. I used to train with a guy who was a 215 pound KU lineman when he came in, and is now a 165 pound monster. Most people that start jiu jitsu lose a lot of weight or gain a lot of muscle.
If self-defense is your focus, find a place that offers Krav Maga or Hagannah, or F.I.G.H.T. They're all pretty much exactly the same thing. There's some bullshit political stuff going on in the KM world, so a lot of people alter things very slightly so that they don't have to pay fees to have their licenses renewed - coming out with a "new" system. It's all based on the same Israeli military hand to hand tactics.
As far as boxing goes - doing it for fun just doesn't seem smart to me unless you avoid sparring. Even with safety gear - you're getting hit in the head on a regular basis. Getting hit in the head over and over and over again just isn't good for you.
