Hey /g/, I have a quick question for you which I am unsure about.

At the moment, I am exercising from Monday-Thursday (40-45min of cardio) and then having Friday-Sunday off. Is this a good way to go? Should I be exercising every second day instead? ie/ Mon, Wed, Fri - Tue, Thur, Sat etc.

My main goal is to lose weight (approximately 30lbs) and eventually start to tone up with weights once I've achieved the desired result.

I'd appreciate any help you could give me.

Picture chosen at random, so most likely completely unrelated.

An hour every day will yield better results, faster.

And this is /fit/, btw.

Fuck, why the fuck did I write /g/?

I must be tired.

Thanks for the answer, though.

And you should be sprint-jog-sprinting, not powerwalking or playing DDR.

Do weights anyway. Muscle mass burns calories faster. Your weight loss might slow down, but as long as it isn't fat, it doesn't really matter. Plus you'll get a headstart.

Also, turn your cardio into running. A lot. A good, solid, all over weight workout followed by between 30-50 minutes of sprint/walk (2 minutes-4 minutes of sprint, walk until you hit 5 minutes, sprint again), or jog five minutes, walk three, jog again. That'll knock it off in no time nad have you jumping out of your skin.

Bumping because I went to have a shower/pick up something from a friend's.

At the moment I'm doing 20mins stationary bike and 20mins elliptical.
Occasionally the rowing machine, but it looks like I'm gonna have to step it up to an hour if I really want to see results (and I do).

Will this be as good as running, or does running > *?

seconded. OP, you should do weights or else you will lose NOTHING. You will only burn your eaten carbs. A muscular guy burns more energy in his resting state compared to the average guy.

Right, well, what are some good exercises I can do to start out? I'm a girl, so don't be going all hardcore on me.

All the basics, just at a weight that is proportionate. Tricep extension, tricep kickback, bench press, squat.

True fact: Girls can do anything guys can do - they just use less weight. Bench press the bar, or the bar + 10 lbs.

You will never bulk up and become a massive mound of muscle. That takes lots of hard effort to achieve that, plus you don't have enough testosterone. The only people who get big and huge are the people who want to get big and huge and work for it.

Start out light, enough that 10reps is taxing, but not impossible.

Thank you very much. I'll definitely take all this information into consideration, and apply it.

Monday:
Bench press, strict shoulder press, dips

Tuesday:
Squats and deadlifts

Wednesday:
Bent-over rows and pullups

Thursday:
Incline dumbbell press, dips, and dumbbell shoulder press

Friday:
Stiff-legged dumbbell deadlifts, front squats, and seated row

3 sets per exercise. 12-15 reps per set week 1, 7-10 reps week 2, 3-5 reps week 3. Weights should be enough that the last rep of each set is difficult.

Avoid machines if possible. Use bars and bells. If you can't do the dips and pullups, use an assist machine. Always warm up with a little cardio (5 mins on a bike is enough) and some appropriate stretching.

This will give you a good, solid base strength. You'll be burning calories at a tremendous rate even when resting. If you don't want to put on muscle, eat less protein, although this shouldn't be a problem for the first couple of months for any weight lifting programme. Those women you see who look like the hulk work out hard, eat like bears, and take supplements (not necessarily roids).

Seconding this. If you are female, you will never become heavily muscled, you don't have the testosterone. Women that do become muscle-bound are on steroids.

Lifting weights and working out is more likely to turn you into Sarah Connor, and that's fucking cool.
