You should realize that if you switch to Vodka and soda water, gin and soda(dont do tonic its worse and as bad as some other soft drinks), or even worse rum and diet coke that you are still consuming empty carbs, sugar alcohols. I drink and im fit, but the strategy is to get drunk of less not more. You probably got your beer gut from drinking ten beers. Switch to drinking 3 vodka and soda waters and dont work your way up. Problem with alcohol is you probably started getting drunk off of 4~6 beers then worked up to a shit ton. You have to avoid that progresion and not drink so much period. Not to mention you need to eat right and exercise. Enjoy your morning run hung over.
