Can swimming or bike riding substitute running as an endurance or more specifically knee strengthening work out? In other words, while my knee heals, can I swim and ride bikes, then when its done healing be good at running?

About a month ago I started swimming again, a mile 5 days a week (66 laps), and I have already seen a lot of improvement.

Swimming will get you tone/lean as long as you are doing it right, can even lose some weight too, I lost about 7 pounds from it.
