Punching Bags! Tim
Yo /fit/ness junkies, I've been doing quite a bit of physical activity lately and suddenly have had an urge to get a punching bag.

Problem.

The house i live in is quite old and there is no real wood to drill the bag hook into, now I'm thinking, I do have a backyard, would it be possible to get like a pole drilled into the floor and hooked up to it?

If this is possible, How much does it cost? Are there any really good websites for punching bags.

Feel free to drop me an email or reply here.

Cheers in advance.

Just get one of those shitty floor standing ones that you fill with water. Don't worry -- it'll be plenty heavy enough to resist your attacks and it is pretty much self-righting should you knock it over.

Here's a simple one from Wal Mart:

I have the same problem. I live an an older house and rent. Landlord says ''NO HOLES ALOWED'' Whats and old slam n' bammer like me to due. Buy floor modles.
I did get one from wally world but had to fill it with sand instead of water. It kinda leaks. Then it's too light and tips over when it comes to side deliverd power elbows and big thai kicks not to mention front kicks. Most people wont have this promlem becouse it takes a long time to build that type of power. I just built a stand widner out of some spare lumber and apoxied it to the floor. It shakes and rattles but dosn't roll. (By the way your looking at about 80 to 100 buck for a floor modle.)
Remember my freind. Hitting bags has its health risks like anything else. You need to properly suport your joints. Most inportantly your wrists. They will sprain. You can find athletic wraping tape at your local sports sullys store and joint supppertive gloves. Ask around at to store till you find someone who knows his stuff, and ask his how to wrap up properly.
Before you know your freinds will be saying...he's a wrecking machine.

Ay, I am quite a large bloke, I'm sitting at 92 kilos at 6'4, So i fear these 'free-standing' ones will be too small for me, or too irritable.

I know the risks involved with punching bags.

Back to previous question, is it possible to get a pole in the floor strong enough to support a bag?

The guys who say that those wavebags (water ones) are good for you are people who have probably learned how to use a bag.

You could probably knock over a wavebag, but a real boxer wouldn't, because when they hit a bag it's really not about strength. You'll be pretty much just pushing it as hard as you can with your fist, and this is wrong.

If you're gonna get a bag, learn to use it properly. Go take some boxing lessons at a gym. You'll learn a variety of different combos, and how to protect your hands, and also how to punch. Otherwise I gaurentee you that you'll get bored of it in like 5 days.
