So for us /fit/tardettes, does anyone know how beneficial belly dancing is? Or how much you need to do to build muscle?

My mom's a bellydancer (teaches it at the YMCA, actually), and with ALL due respect to her (I loves my mom) but she's FAT.
It's good for the hips and abs and is very low intensity so you can do any hour long class without breaking a sweat.
You will feel it in your legs though.

If you're a chick, I guess it's an exotic way to tighten that tummy.

If you're a dude, no. Just... no.

I honestly don't know, but I get the impression it's very beneficial, especially if you do it right. In many things you get out what you put in, and I get the FEELING this is the same. I would at least look into it more.

I'm a dude. I belly dance.
Male belly dancing is a bit different though, than the women's.
But to OP: Belly dancing is rather beneficial. You're not going to lose weight doing it, but you will strengthen abdominal and back muscles, arms and legs as well. And if you do much in the way of shoulder rolls (I'm not sure how common they are in female, but they're a big thing in male) then you're really gonna feel it in your shoulders and neck.

Say more about male belly dancing. I have never seen this, but it sounds interesting.

Well, it really works your abs if those are you problem areas.
As for male belly dancing... no, just no. It works as an exercise but, aesthetically? No, thanks.

Sure. Obviously, when Males do it, it's supposed to be more masculine, so it's less slow, round undulations and more angles and such.
Lots of shoulders and chest, and generally less of the hips and bellies.
You cannot find any of the particularly masculine-type bellydancers on youtube (most of the good examples make you pay to see their videos). But this guy here is one of the least... queer on the site.

I'm happy to see there's a male bellydancer. There seriously shouldn't be anything wrong with that- I mean, come on- you can dance with a sword. It's not like you're gonna give some sultan a lapdance.
Fucking ignorance...
Even though it's "frowned upon" there still has to be males for ballets to properly work, or even some cheer leading moves. These aren't all-female activities.
