Are they a must? How much should one take?

they are mainly just for convience. if you want to take them, just once a day after your train with some sort of juice of simple carb.

They're not a must, but they're not for convenience either.

They're for post-workout only, to give your muscles protein as quickly and as completely as possible.

They are very useful. I usually drink 2 shakes a day (with 8oz milk), each with two servings. About ~110g protein, maybe 45% of what I get on a general day.

Your body can only absorb a given amount of protein at one time. So rather than drinking one protein drink after your workout trying consuming smaller amounts throughout the day. Especially make sure you have some protein BEFORE you work out. Of course, afterward is necessary too, but don't think you'll be fine just drinking one shake a day.

It's pretty simple. Your body isn't going to absorb 42grams of protein in one sitting. If you drink your shake all at once you'll be shitting/pissing out most of it. Consuming smaller amounts more often will be more effective.

Hes talking about exactly what he said, the body can only process so much protein in and waste out over a given length of time,as you gain mass you can boost that limit but its still a bottleneck in the protein to muscle conversion ratio

Youre forgetting a few important things,..
like type of protein,..soy is bad for men because of the plant estrogens,.. whey is really the best IMHO

a good cheap whey is vitamin world "designer whey" chocolate, no sucralose/aspartame,. 17 grams protein per scoop.
