i've been hearing alot about HIIT workouts

can anyone elaborate as to what those are?

High intensity cardio; you alternate moderate periods of effort with short bursts of all-out effort. VERY effective for fat stripping. It's also CNS intensive so you don't want to be doing it every day of the week; similar to weights.

Not OP but since HIIT is CNS intensive as you said, I've been doing HIIT, 5k, HIIT, 5k, rest, HIIT, long distance (~10 miles). This goes Sun - Sat respectively.

Am I doing it right? This is what I've been doing for the past 3 weeks with no injuries, so should I keep doing it? or is there a way for me to burn fast quicker?

I also lift every other day, intensity of that depends on how sore I am.

There's actually two major 'systems' that work in your body to move things around whether it be weights or your body. The muscles utilize actin-myosin contractions which is powered by ATP. ATP can be generated through 3 of the body's systems which are the phosphocreatine, glycolytic and oxidative phosphorylative pathways. On the other hand, the brain fires electrical impulses which the CNS carries to the muscles. At the molecular level, the electrical impulses are generated through ion gradients which are depleted after every impulse. This gives rise to CNS fatigue, especially with very heavy lifting very often (which, without sufficient rest, can chronically lead to overtraining -- now you know how overtraining works :P). In any case, GTG targets improvements in CNS pathways to certain muscles and muscular endurance to make you *specifically* adapt to the exercise you are doing. Thus, GTG dips for example would not specifically increase your strength in say military presses even though both work the pecs, triceps and shoulders heavily. GTG is mainly used for targeting *specific* exercises to increase their numbers.. and not really anything else.

okay i take it that "GTG" stands for grease the groove which i've obviously heard of before.

so are you saying that even though dip reps/pullup reps increase through GTG, you're not really getting any stronger? i don't want to believe it!!!!!! noooooo.
