What to do at the gym? spanishbomb !!o2n54vlWHXd
Hey /fit/. My friend is inviting me to his gym for a free 3 day pass tomorrow. I work out at home and have never been to a public corporate gym in my life (I work out at a boxing gym, but it's nowhere near the same!)

So...uh, what the fuck should I do? What's best for cardio? I usually jump rope or run/HIIT at home and then do my regular lifts. Is it okay to run on the treadmills? I'm sort of nervous about doing deadlifts and olympic lifts at the gym, is this pretty regular or are most people just doing bench presses and CURLZ?

So uh... any advice on gym etiquette or anything?

Some fat dude will come up to you in the shower and ask if you want a blowjob. How you answer is upto you and your choice of lifestyle.

It's a gym. In general, it's really a place where everyone goes for a common purpose. So there lies a social contract if you will. People are pretty chill there, in my opinion. You can ask people how to use certain machines if you're not familiar with them. As for etiquette, I ask if people are actually using a machine, rather than just sitting at it and resting. Since you're going with a friend, I'm sure you don't need to ask anyone else to help spot you.

As for anything else, it all depends on what's available at the gym and the clientelle. Some people gravitate towards the machines more than the free weights. I personally like doing stuff people aren't so I get to have a little more freedom and get to pace myself better. I really don't like having to wait for people that do a set, then wait a minute at the machine, then continue. I usually do a set, then go do a set for another exercise, and by the time I'm done with that I come back to the first one.

Okay thanks.

I don't know why I'm so nervous, I think it's just because it's a new experience or something. I've gone to different dojos or boxing/muay thai/BJJ gyms before with not much nervousness.

Is the elliptical good? I've heard some people mention that they do HIIT on it? How the fuck would I do this? I do HIIT by sprinting uphill(30 seconds) and then jogging back down for 30 seconds. I do this for about eight minutes before I hate my life.

Also, this thread is now also a congratulations to me. I've dropped to 168 lbs. One of my main goals when I started (at 225!) was to get below 170. Yay.

Ellipticals are good for fat people, since they're low impact and won't destruct your knees from running. I'm sure HIIT is possible on it, but I dunno how.

You should do noisy deadlifts with the barbells and make the other patrons feel uncomfortable about their pussitude.

Theres rules but most are unspoken, try not to get in people's way and remember playground rules apply at all times.

I think I will do my HIIT on the bikes. Noisy deadlifts it is!

It's easy. Just up the resistance to max (mine goes up to 25) and pedal furiously. I like it because I can use both my arms and legs as necessary to distribute the exhaustion. Also, I can max out on it without feeling like it's gonna throw me across the room. I'm afraid to go over 8 on a treadmill and I'd rather not look like a wingnut sprinting up and down the riverside boardwalk (the only contiguous stretch of walkway in my immediate area).

OP, if you exercise like a maniac, people will probably stare at you. Didn't you know, corp gyms are for checking out the other patrons, not for serious workouts.
