Should I do HIIT then hit the weights or the other way around? The other day on /fit/ I read a thread that asked this question and the response was basically to do weight training first, the logic being that you won't burn as much fat if you have glycogen in your bloodstream to burn first, which a weight session will get rid off. The same logic it was argued, was why you should do cardio after you wake (since your body will turn to fat). But most google hits say the opposite: that you should make sure you have eaten before you do HIIT (it promotes more fat loss) otherwise you risk a catabolic state. Examples:

So if this is true I should do HIIT first right? But could I risk going into a catabolic state when I'm lifting weights afterwards then? Basically how do I avoid eating my muscles for energy? When does the body go for fat and when does it go for delicious muscle protein?

I have something in my stomach to burn = burn fat + stomach contents
I do not have something in my stomach = burn fat + muscle
I had something in my stomach, did HIIT, then hit the weights = goodbye muscles

If you can lift weights after HIIT, you did it wrong.
If you can do HIIT after lifting weights, you did it wrong.

If you do HIIT first, you won't have the energy/coordination to make effective use of your weight lifting time. If you do HIIT after weights, your body has already burned a lot of the available glycogen and can get into the aerobic zone faster.

I decided to not to do them on the same day. After a hard session of weights my performance on HIIT was shit, rendering it almost pointless to do it when i can alternate the days and get max performance on each, which would most likely give better results overall.

Just my 2 cents though.

Forgot to add, they both use EPOC. I'd extremely advise against doing HIIT straight after weights as you need time for Protein to repair your muscles, if you do them on the same day ideally it should be:

HIIT - AM
Weights - late PM

Still though, imo i'd just do them on alternating days.

People say do HIIT on your days off, but will that not just tear your muscles again, meaning the next session they won't be fully healed?

Not really, HIIT doesnt completely destroy muscle tissue in the way that lifting does. Its safe to do it on your off-days from lifting, the protein will do its job.

i do hiit on monday, then weight training on tuesday, and also walk for maybe 45 minutes just to do something to keep myself from getting bored, then on wednesday i do hiit (i always follow up with a cooldown walk that takes maybe 20 minutes) and just repeat. on sunday, i rest completely, and some whole weekends i skip the gym. just alternate the day, but if you're looking for weight loss, make sure you're walking even on the days you're not doing hiit

Then HIIT.

You will have emptied most of your glycogen stores, so it may be burning fat more effectively DURING HIIT. On the downside, your performance will not be as great, and HIIT isnt about burning fat doing it, its the after effect so personally its a matter of choice.

A) Do on alternate days or seperate by morning/night to get max performance

B) Seperate by 1 hour rest, probably resulting in decreased performance.
