Push Ups Anonymous
I realise this has been asked many times before, but Googling gives me mixed messages.

I've just starting doing push-ups/press-ups and I was wondering whether they will build up muscles in my arms, as well as my chest?

Also, how many should I be doing daily? I haven't been counting, but I've been going til I'm pretty worn out.

> how many should I be doing daily?

If you can still move, you're doing it wrong. If you can still get up off the floor, you're doing it wrong.

So, I must be doing push-ups til I'm dead. Got it.

I consider push-ups to be more cardio, and though it will be build some muscle if you don't have any, it will more primarily increase your heart rate and burn calories/fat.

With a push up you're working your upper body. Feel the spots that burn and get slightly swollen? those are primary points of muscle exertion. So yes, your arms will feel the workout as well as your chest.

Do them until you can't. Then get on your knees and do more. Do these in sets.

Most people just starting push ups don't have a lot of muscle. And if you're fat, even better--the weight increases the difficulty.

Only if you do them to failure or a few reps from it. If you haven't done any exercises ever before, pretty much anything will build muscle at first.

Ok, thanks.

By the way, I'm not fat. I'm pretty thin, just not alot of muscle.

Definitely not a good idea to go to failure daily.

Why not ?

your muscles need to heal. also if you're skinny, you'll need to eat more to convince your body to build more muscle.

I usually do
30 push ups
40 sit ups
right after another, 3 times. Gets me pretty worn up.

I personally don't do pushups to failure daily, rather, I do a fixed number (100) to keep a routine which helps I think

Then at the end of the month I can say i did 3000+ pushups lol

This whole thread is fail. I gained 20 pounds in two months eating an extra 500 calories a day and doing just push ups, crunches, and pull ups every day.

I'm an ectomorph with an insanely high metabolism and starting out i was 5'9" 136 and now I'm 5'9" 155. First thing I built up was a V-taper, next was the abs, then the traps, delts, biceps, and triceps came.

If you just want to get stronger overall and not look so skinny, just add tons of lean protein and do push ups, pull ups, and crunches to just before failure every morning before you start your day.

Squats/lunges are also awesome.

if you have very little muscle, they will probably build some
otherwise put 20kg (or less/more) on your back and do them

i wouldn't do them to failure every day
for doing it everyday i would suggest picking a number of reps, splitting them to 5 sets or so and doing that every day
one day per week you only do 1/3 of the reps
every 1 or 2 weeks you increase the number of reps

lets say you start at 60 reps
mon, tue, wed, thu, fri and sat you would do 5 sets of: 20, 15, 10, 8, 7
sun you would do 7, 5, 3, 3, 2
next week add a few reps, for example go to 63
and do 21, 16, 10, 8, 8

be conservative in your choice of starting reps
it is better to start lower and take a little longer than to start to high and get nowhere

this progression would also work for improving the number of chin/pull ups and dips you can do

I will in about 2 hours when I get home. I'm at a friend's house now.

Losing/gaining 2 pounds a week is very safe and possible given the right diet and exercise. Read a fucking book. Also, considering that I just started working out and gains in the beginning are usually at a faster rate, I don't see what your LOLing about.

This is very important. People there raping their muscles everyday get shit for gains.

Without the use of roids, maximal muscle growth is 2-4 pounds / month. That leaves 12-16 pounds of fat. In other words, you just got fat. Or maybe you just got healthy if you were really skinny.

that can vary for newbies, same with 2 lbs/week fat loss.

Pretty much all above 2-4 pounds a month is fat, water and glycogen. Yes, 4 pounds of muscle a month is easier to gain for beginners.

pushups will build both arm and chest muscles, but the arm muscles will always give out first....so the chest muscles never get a full work out. this is usually overcome by using pre-exhaust exercises like dumbbell flyes or pec decs, and then doing bench presses straight after to fully work pecs. requires machines though!

You both hit the nail on the head. While I was not like dangerously thin, I had very little to no muscle mass. I don't think I only gained muscle, as that's pretty much impossible, but I do think at least half of my weight gain was muscle. I have definition in my abs, my pecks, and my arms.

Seriously, if you're not that crazy into going to the gym and not looking for like absolute physical perfection (just looking to have a good looking body), I'd try it out for a couple weeks and see how you feel. Pushups, Pullups, crunches, every day as many as you can just before failure.

Vary your types of push ups (wide, narrow, elevated), vary your pull ups (in front of your chest and behind your back) and vary your ab workout (crunches, v sits) you'll work pretty much every muscle in your upper body.

Not right at all. Once you do push ups and bench enough it wont work your arms out hardly at all.

OP here. That sounds ideal for me, thanks.

Can someone just confirm what 'just before failure ' means? I have an idea, but I'd rather be sure.

Here's a great fucking idea people, how about giving him a full-body bodyweight routine, instead of filling his mind with a load of horse shit.

The body needs full stimulation to grow properly, working out by just doing Push-Ups and Crunches is for Niggers.

OP, do this this times a week.
