New to MMA, HALP! Anonymous
Dearest /fit/, I'm looking into joining an MMA dojo in my new town. I've never done any martial arts (aside from getting my karate yellow belt in elementary school), but I'm in decent shape, as I like to work out, run, and play soccer. I'm also naturally athletic (meaning I can play almost any sport I want to, and do OK with a little practice)

The guy who runs the gym uses a mix of Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Shootfighting, and Submission Wrestling.

My question is, What am I getting myself into? Is it tough to pick up all the techniques, styles, etc?

Pic related (the kids in the front row could probably kick my ass)

?_?

Anyways, OP, expect to get the workout of your life. I mean being worked to the epitome of exhaustion on your first day. You'll get used to it though, and become better for it.

You won't be learning any of those styles. A mix of styles does not combine the qualities of those styles. All that you get is a set techniques with no common factors. You will not get the benefit of learning to learn faster the techniques that follows a common pattern. Your ability create improvised techniques on the fly will be extremely limited and this very core of combat where nothing goes as expected. Your level of skill with each technique will be quite limited because of this unless you only want to train, eat and sleep.

But most of all, at some point in your life you'll hit a peak in skill and begin to deteriorate. You cannot continue to improve throughout your life.

MMA is not martial arts. It's a sport. In a fight, the one who wants to win more, will win. It's all a matter of how ruthless and dirty you get.
