>Brewer's yeast is known to be a rich source of nutrients; therefore, as expected, beer can contain significant amounts of nutrients, including magnesium, selenium, potassium, phosphorus, biotin, and B vitamins. In fact, beer is sometimes referred to as "liquid bread".[31] Some sources maintain that filtered beer loses much of its nutrition.[32][33]

A 2005 Japanese study found that low alcohol beer may possess strong anti-cancer properties.[34] Another study found nonalcoholic beer to mirror the cardiovascular benefits associated with moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages.[35] However, much research suggests that the primary health benefit from alcoholic beverages comes from the alcohol they contain.[36]

It is considered that overeating and lack of muscle tone is the main cause of a beer belly, rather than beer consumption. A recent study, however, found a link between binge drinking and a beer belly. But with most overconsumption it is more a problem of improper exercise and overconsumption of carbohydrates than the product itself.[37]

The dose makes the poison. You can't make a blanket statement like "beer is bad" or "beer is good" because having 1-2 beers is not the same as having 14-15 beers.

Having one beer every so often is going to do jack all to your body. Getting piss ass drunk on the other hand is very bad for you.

America has the most laughable drinking culture I've ever seen. Everybody has to be all hush-hush when they're not 21 and want to drink something, so it's seen as something cool to be able to buy booze, that's why everybody is so fascinated by it and still does idiotic binge drinking to impress his bros and hos with 22 years.

While in the rest of the normal world, teens have already drank, vomited and used up all the "coolness" in drinking by 19 and are more balanced people.

I'm 19 and I haven't drunk any alcohol. If I really need to I can wait until I'm 21, and in the meantime I'm actually trying to gain muscle and lose weight and get to be a healthy, attractive person, so I'm not going to bother doing things to sabotage myself.

But I imagine some alcohol in moderation is not the end of the world for an average person (ie someone who doesn't lift weights and thinks jogging occasionally is fine exercise).
>> Anonymous
>>310329
The problem with that retarded car at 16, army at 18, booze at 21 thing is that it's simply more reasonable for teens to try out alcohol, let them pretend it's call and everything, let them vomit their guts out when they overdo it and learn all about responsible drinking BEFORE becoming an adult. That way, most 20 something year-olds have already experimented enough with it to know their limits.

The way it is in America, completely immature, irresponsible kids get to drink all hush hush and then drive cars. Now tell me what's more retarded?

What are you raging about? I honestly couldn't follow your seemingly random string of sentences.
I guess your message is alcohol is a-okay drink as much as you want and then go exercise the next day?
Sure, I guess. You do that if you want.

It's a proven fact that if you drink a lot the night before exercise, your body focuses too much on clearing out the toxins to burn much fat and you'll probably feel like shit anyways.

So forgive me for wanting to lose weight and because of that I don't drink. This is /fit/ I'm on, right? Not /ck/?

But seriously I have no idea why you're raging about a personal decision of mine
>> Anonymous

He's raging because of your naive blcak&white-thinking. It's either I'M HEALTHY NO ALCOHOL STAIGHT X EDGE 4 LYFE or it's the other retarded end of YEAH BRO GO DRINK THAT VODKA AIN'T NO GOOD PARTY WITHOUT VOMITING. Granted, the healthy extreme is the favorable one, but either of those is narrow-minded extreme thinking.

I've known people who piteously watch their vegetables, go yoga and jog all the goddamn time and when go out drinking they drink more than I ever could and wake up fresh the next day.

Not everything has to be either or, both things can be combined
>> Anonymous
>>310368
Except that's not at all what I said and that's not at all how I think.
Was it this line?

>But I imagine some alcohol in moderation is not the end of the world for an average person (ie someone who doesn't lift weights and thinks jogging occasionally is fine exercise).

Two other people already discussed that thorougly I thought. I'm not a normal guy who lifts 2 times a week. I lift many more times a week and I don't jog, I do heavily calculated HIIT sessions. Just exercise differences, no need to rage.

The bottom line is if you're looking to gain muscle, alcohol surpresses testosterone and is probably not a good idea, and most of the benefits you get from drinking can be gotten somewhere else. I can't ever see myself drinking more than one or two glasses a week.

If you like drinking, feel it's worth the empty calories, and don't binge drink regularly, good for you.

I usually drink about once a week, usually on the weekend. The problem is that once I start up I don't want to stop and about 50% of the time I go too far. Not to the point of throwing up and passing out, but to where I feel fairly shitty and am hungover all day next day.

Not that big of a deal, however, I do blame beer for putting on about 10-15 pounds earlier this year. Had a bit of an alcoholism-style streak for a few months.

The moral is, drink responsibly!
>> Anonymous
So why do people drink when they go out to do things in the evening? My brother frequents bars and clubs, and drinks a 'fair' amount; i believe something on the lines of 10-15 units in a night. However a friend of mine drank 68 units in one single night (although perhaps him being a very large rugby player make him more resistant IDK).

I ask this because i do not drink at all, and haven't had a drop for around 5 years now. I don't seem to be affected in a negative way because of it; in fact i believe i am in better health for it. Not only this, but i enjoy myself every night go out..

tldr; What makes drinking to the excess so great?
>> Anonymous
The normal person drinks about 200ml of 40% alcohol. That's about 400 calories or something, not that radical.

If you drink the same amount of alcohol in the form of beer, then boy howdie will you be packing on those pounds!
>> Anonymous
>>310836
It's not that people WANT to drink, really. First, you drink to get a nice buzz, then you try to maintain that buzz because it's a nice feeling. Some people can simply maintain it, good for them, they know how to drink. But some people don't just maintain it but keep on drinking. And once you're drunk, you don't notice the fact, so you keep on drinking

That sounds like a fair point, but surely after 1 negative experience one would just learn that if they were to drink x amounts of y they would fuck up their night. One other thing that really gets on my nerves is the kind of girl and even boy that drinks, makes a disgusting spectacle of themselves, gets upset about it all and does the same fucking thing the next weekend... Honestly this happened every single week for year after year back when i was in school.

The only reasoning i could come to is that they are doing as some kind of cry for help, or hurting themselves for some embarrassingly stupid reason. But if they want this kind of attention, why do they not just cut themselves?

It takes some people a long time to figure out their limits, also... The more you drink, the more your judgment is impaired, so it's pretty easy to start out with good intentions and go too far before you realize it, then wake up the next day thinking "what the fuck is wrong with me".
>> Anonymous
>>310902
Or if you have to guess how much you've drank, like in cocktails or out of plastic mugs instead of shot glasses. Everybody has some kind of criteria for drinking, it's just a question of figuring it out.

I know that I can drink 200ml 40% vodka on the spot and maybe another 100ml later. Anything after that starts to get really risky.

You have just described Finland, the only difference being that you can buy alcoholic beverages with a alcohol content of <22% when you turn 18 (in bars, you can order anything). Once you turn 20 there're no limits. And people who started "drinking" continue to always drink to drunkenness when they drink, the only major change over time being the lessening frequency of drinking. Taking a glass of wine with a meal or having a drink to relax in the evening is pretty much considered pretentious and stuck-up by these people. And since they're the majority, and the point in life which pretty much chooses what kind of drinker you become is teenage, the age where your peers are most important, only a traumatic experience linked to drinking may cause a teen to not accept the attitude toward drinking that seeps down from the older majority. The rest assume that attitude is what adulthood is all about and, thus, the circle is closed.

Anything beyond two drinks can do absolutely nothing positive for you. Maybe on a rare
celebration occasion you might have more than two drinks, but I can't think of a single
reason why any self-respecting human being who is serious about their health and fitness
goals would ever binge drink or get drunk on a regular basis. Getting drunk is not an
option on this program. If you get drunk, you?re not following the program. If you drink
in large quantities ANY TIME for ANY REASON, just look in the mirror and admit the
truth to yourself; "I 'm just not THAT serious about getting in shape. It?s not that high of a priority right now. I don't really want it THAT bad." At least then you're honest with
yourself. If you enjoy social drinking in moderation, by all means go ahead and do it. But
if you drink heavily, at least admit the truth to yourself.
