my lower back started hurting today while doing overhead press

am i doin it wrong and injuring myself or is this normal if i have slight back pain in general

You probably can't take the weight.
Scale down/use other exercises to strengthen your back.

It probably means your arms are too weak and your back is compensating. Don't know what to do about it though.

Are you doing Deadlifts? if so do them after not before.

No, it means your back can't take the weight yet.
Your arms don't help to keep you upright, that's your core - abs, hip muscles and back.

Depending on the pain it might just have been your lower back fatiguing as any muscle would. But make sure you're sensible about it.
