I practiced doing squats with a backpack+40-50lbs in it and did a fuckload of squats like that before going to the gym to do squats. I did this for about 2 weeks so I didn't look too weak at the gym.

Look man, squats are hardcore. You probably shouldn't even do them alone just because you may unknowingly fuck the form up and jeopardize yourself and even fall over. Go do overhead squats, it will fuck you up. You can use some dumbbells. You will be the zen fucking master of stability IF you have the flexibility to perform them. If you don't then google how to get it. If you want a foolproof style squat that you can do at home; you can rope or a dipbelt and two big boxes and do dip belt squats. Just make sure you SIT BACK and DONT ROUND your back. Form is function when it comes to this shit man, do it right, do it light, then get crunk on some heavy weight.
