I sometimes have problems with this, but you seem to have discovered the solution of daydreaming while you run (I would suggest staying with the treadmill if you plan to lose yourself while running). Once I get to 4 miles at about 8mph, I'm pretty damn bored (that's half an hour of running), so I just step it up to 9 mph for the last mile. At least for me, pushing your speed up for the final stretch will keep you more focused on your own discomfort than your boredom.
