hey fit, i need some help.

i've been working out for over 8 months and i've barely seen any progress (i blame my diet; i don't eat much and i've just started to fix that). I'm a huge noob in bodybuilding and i have a pretty weird body: all parts of me are skinny except my gut.

i came to fit to ask them about their workout routines and routines i can use to get muscular bulk. i read magazines, e-books, and i just finished bill starr's 5x5 routine and that completely blew all of what i thought training was all about. now i'm utterly confused. what i do know is that i must lift heavy to get bigger, but that's pretty much it. the 5x5 is telling me to squat 2-3 times a week for 2-3 sets at a time? i'm so confused because when i worked my chest, i did 4-5 exercises with my 8RM, 3-4 sets each with a 25 rep burnout of the exercise for the last set.

i'm so fucking confused. i thought bodybuilding wasn't supposed to be complicated. bill starr's 5x5 totally blew everything i knew out of the water.

help me dear god

never take bodybuilding articles seriously,
bodybuilding never has anything worthwhile to write about so heaps of bs articles are churned out with the 'latest' and 'innovative' workout routines.
Just stick to big compound movements (squats, benchpress, deadlifts, rows etc. dont even think about doing fucking bicep curls) and different variations aiming for 4-10 reps
+ Eat a lot of good protein and carbs, very very important.

there is no 'best' number of sets/reps/exercises, especially when you're starting out.

Don't listen to anything that's advertised under "Body Building". There's a big difference between body building and strength training. Body building is just focusing getting XBOX HUEG and having balanced muscles. Like other guy said, do big compound lifts, 4-8 reps, 5-6 meals a day with a solid source of protein/complex carbs in each meal. As a beginner you don't need anything from an article. Anything you do to your body will make it grow and until you hit a wall, you won't need anything other than the basics.
