headgear is really only necessary if you're competing in actual matches, during practices its just unnecessary because it has virtually no weight, so there's no added benefit of training with it on (unless you're trying to avoid cauliflower ear) I used to wear a mouthguard as well, its harder to get air in when you have to suck it through two small holes, but the amount of impact it takes for your jaw is a huge plus.
