If the shoes are the same shoes you've been wearing for the last 2 years, then get yourself a new pair for working out. Something that's comfortable and has an arch tends to be best. It doesn't have to be athletics, but it certainly doesn't hurt to get athletics either.
Think of your shoe like the shock absorber for all the joints in your feet, knees, and hips. If you've worn out your shocks, then you need to replace them. I'm a Canada fag though, and don't feel like converting KM into Miles, but I'd say every 3,000 or so Kilometres you walk you should be getting new shoes (or replacing inserts).
