How damaging is jump rope for your knees?

assuming you land on the balls of your feet, it's not.

Ugh. I land on my tiptoes. So that's why my shins hurt.

Your lower legs hurting all over is a pretty common thing for people who are just starting to jump rope. The constant up and down motion, and balancing on the balls of your feet will work your calves, and for some reason it can make your shins sore.

I'm guessing you're jumping on a hard surface like concrete or something. If you can find a more padded surface you'll probably be a lot better off. Also, you'll probably want to stretch your calves before, and immediately after.
