So after watching this video:

http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/263

I'm more and more convinced of the moral case for, if not vegetarianism, at least a drastic reduction in my meat consumption. Is it true that there are some nutrients that are only attainable from meat, or can a veggie diet fulfill all your dietary requirements? Is it possible to be, say a vegetarian bodybuilder or athlete?
>> Anonymous
yes it's possible, but you gotta supplement the stuff you cannot gain by your veggie diet.
I'm not too familiar with the topic, but some fats and iron need to be substituted as far as I know.
To make it short: Vegheads suck. Eat meat.

It's not that hard, except for a few things like B12. Supplements can take care of that, as well as fortified foods, unless research suggesting that supplements are ineffective is true. Just make sure your diet maintains a good amount of diversity.

I don't eat anything in the animal kingdom, but depending on your reasons for going vegetarian, you could always hedge your bets: reduce your meats consumption considerably and limit it to local produce from a natural diet produced in a pre-industrial (sustainable/non-factory farmed/non cornfed/non gmo/non injected) manner. In that case you can eat meat that wil actually not do more damage than it does good and also avoid many of the ethical/moral/environmental concerns.

here are some reasons why I personally became vegeterian. and its not because i felt bad for animals.
Meat-eating has been linked with cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, kidney stones, and many other devastating diseases. By eliminating meat from your diet you can take a crucial step towards a longer life of health. A vegetarian diet improves your stamina, concentration, and sense of well-being. In one study, athletes who switched to a vegetarian diet improved their endurance to almost 3 times as much as those who remained carnivorous.
Flesh foods are loaded with dangerous poisons and contaminants such as hormones, herbicides and pesticides, and antibiotics. As these toxins are all fat-soluble, they concentrate in the fatty flesh of the animals. Not to mention the viruses, bacteria and parasites such as salmonella, trichinella and other worms, and toxoplasmosis parasites. Our saliva contains the enzyme alpha-amylase, the sole purpose of which is to digest the complex carbohydrates in plant foods. (This enzyme is not found in the saliva of carnivores.) Vegetarianism can also benefit asthmatics and victims of multiple sclerosis (MS). According to a 1985 year-long study conducted by the University Hospital in Linkoping, Sweden, over 90% of bronchial asthma patients had less severe and less frequent attacks while eating a vegetarian diet, and reduced their need for medication. According to Dr. William Castelli, a switch to a vegetarian diet could help more than 90% of all MS victims arrest the disease process and improve their condition.
In summary, vegetarians are less likely to suffer from a host of crippling or fatal diseases.

umm i like to eat meat, and find that it is very healthy.

I also eat a salad with dinner every day that consists of a wedge of iceburg lettuce, carrots, onions, bell peppers, cucumber, and either ranch or italian dressing. So i love veggies also

Just wats yalls problem with meat. Most of the meat i eat ive killed the animal myself because i live on a farm in mississippi. I hunt and i try to always make a kill shot on the animal so they dont have to die a prolonged painful death.

There are many valid reasons for vegetarianism, health is one of the biggest. Animal rights is NOT one in my opinion.

Eat whatever you want, but once you start deluding yourself into believing that not eating meat will eliminate animal cruelty and murder you have gone off the deep end. Yeesh, at least do it for health and not a faggy non-reason
>> Anonymous
I was a vegetarian for 6 years and I stopped because I had some health issues and was really anemic. Now I feel much better.

I believe that a vegetarian diet is the same as a regular diet in that it can be good or bad for you depending if you pay good attention to getting balanced meals and the right nutrients. That being said it's much easier to eat right if you don't cut out entire food groups (ie meat, dairy)
>> Anonymous

you can eat meat and be just as healthy as vegetarians. actually, you can eat meat and be even more healthy. it all depends on which kinds and how much (plus all those other lifestyle choices)

if you have the power of will to cut meats entirely from your diet, you have the power of will to not eat steak 10 times a week.

If people don't eat cows, farmers will just stop breeding them, and they can't live free in nature after millenia of breeding for domesticity... Eat a cow to keep them from going extinct. It's humane.

I've been a vegetarian for about 16 years now. No ill effects from it. Good health, look years younger than what I am, work out regularly.

It's true that human are built to be omnivores. I accept that and know that if I were in a position of eat meat or die, damnit I'll eat a skunky sweat sock filled with pig intestines.

But meat isn't supposed to be our main food supply. You can't survive only eating meat.

You can survive only on vegetables & fruits.

Not holier than thou....don't care what you eat...as long as you eat balanced & proper. Scrawny sick ass weak vegetarians are the true fuck ups. They don't edumacate themselves on eating right. So are "vegans" that can't eat eggs or dairy products.

vegetarians usually fail on getting enough protein and iron.

a smart vegan can overcome this but will never have the advantages of having meat in their diet, they might get like 80% of it.

the problem with protein is that not all of it is the same, protein from different foods have different bioavailability (ie the amount your body can absorb) and have a different composition of amino acids. you can eat an egg, and all of the protein on the nutritional label will be absorbed (eggs bioavail. is 100). you can eat some beans and the can might say 20g protein, but your body can only get say 12-15g of that (bean bioavailability is near the bottom of the scale). this must be taken into account.

the iron in leafy greens is also very low, and most smart vegans supplement with iron. you can become anemic if you dont.

fats are also an issue, as some saturated fat is neccissary. so you have to eat coconut and avocado and shit.

but like i said, most vegans make the choice on an emotional and moral basis, that eating animals is wrong. without doing proper research on what the human body needs to survive.

there are a few vegan bodybuilders and athletes, but compared to meat eaters, they are unimpressive and often being vegan is a handicap for them in terms of performance

Just go pesco-vegetarian, which basically means you only eat vegetarian shit and white fish or sometimes eggs.

I'm generally not a vegaboo, but I exclusively avoid red meat and pork. Only meats I eat are seafood and certain cuts of poultry like breasts and tenderloins. I did this based on the Okinawan Diet which basically says eat all sorts of vegetables and fruits, focus on greens, and only eat seafood. Problem is that chicken is too delicious, so I still eat that. But the important is that I cut out disgusting red meat, the majority of which isn't even digestible by the human body.

Main word here is Cheese!!!
Cheese is a product of animals then WHY do you eat it.

True vegetarians are sick people unless they take food supplements. Iron, Essential amino acids, etc.

Cheese is the only thing keeping you alive now, = main sourse of protein (and it's a really good one too), it also has a specific amino acid that acts in phosphorylation of fatty acids in your liver*

*Unless you get that amino acid (i always forget what it is called...) you'll have adipose degeneration of liver (wiki it)

Now i'll explain some stuff about meat.
Yes, when meats are being decomposed in your large intestine toxins are formed BUT only when you have dysbacteriosis.

Well no one said that eating fatty meats is healthy... stick to lean steak, chicken without skin, etc

I think i should make a thread about drinking milk... ill do that later

I finally figured out what works best for me, diet wise. I avoid beef and pork as much as possible. I find it hard to digest, and I am way into my daily shit in terms of formation, consistency, color, feeling, etc. Centering your diet around plants gives you the best shits. Totally formed, barely needing to wipe, and feel great coming out! I found once I cut out meat from the base of my meals, I also lost weight. 25lb in the past 6 months, and that's without additional exercise until recently. Now I still eat fish and eggs and will on occasion do chicken in small quantities. But really, my beef/pork elimination has done wonders for me. I don't give care what anyone else eats, and I don't even talk about it unless someone asks why I am eating fish or chicken at a barbeque when there are "all these steaks and ribs here". I love the taste, it just does not completely agree with me.

>vegetarian bodybuilder or athlete

Even though I know a lot of these responses are trolls, I have a few things I wish to clear up.

Firstly, as a vegan, I'm well informed on the matter, so here we go.

All the required vitamins and minerals are available in a vegan diet, without taking pills and supplements - although fortified soymilk is a really good idea for anyone planning on cutting out dairy and eggs.

The myth about complete proteins and the like is entirely false. It is not required that you have every amino acid in every meal you eat - your body just holds onto them until it can link them together to create complete proteins and thus build muscle.

Iron, Calcium, Zinc, etc, are all available in the same place animals get them from. Plants.

I should also mention that the amount of protein omnivores it is damaging to their kidneys.
Ironically, it is because of this that milk is actually linked to reducing calcium in the human body.
It releases toxins that destroy vital nutrients, leaving us depleted.

tl;dr: meat is lions. vegans do it best.
>> Anonymous

You only have 5 senses dammit, taste is the most sensitive, why cut out nearly half of all ze flavours in the world?
>> Anonymous
>>167517
>Firstly, as a vegan, I'm well informed on the matter,

why? your bullshit uncited cnnscience is as bad as the people that say you need meat at every meal.

now i don't mind vegetarians that don't eat meat or dairy because of the hormones used at corporate farms, but stop pretending that humans aren't omnivores or that the earth could support only herbivores. yes, some animals get nutrients from plants, but others get nutrients from the animals that eat the plants. HUMANS DO BOTH

Evolution is the only argument. You keep pretending that humans are somehow special and outside of the rules to nature. I'll be a realist and realize that humans are just bags of meat that talk and still fit into the plant->hervivore->carnivore->bigger carnivore cycle.

>Evolution isn't really the only argument at all. Why try to use the past as proof when we have a world full of indicators at our disposal?

Because there are no finite indicators. You make claims off of one study, and I make ones off another. Science disagrees on a lot of things and the only thing we have is looking at nature.

You still haven't even attempted to answer my question about which animals stopped eating meat, or even what you think we should do about walking(in the sense that it has negative effects on our bodies too)
