Grunting while lifting weights? Anonymous
Are there any benefits to grunting while lifting weights?
Any negative side effects?
If there aren't any, why do people do it?
>> Anonymous
studies show that grunting helps you lift heavier weights

makes you lift better

side effect: people can hear you grunt

I recently started grunting a little and have the feeling it motivates me more and gives me more strength (which might just be because of the added motivation).

Grunting will make you squat 50times more.

It's not always voluntary.

I've grunted unintentionally before when deadlifting a whole shitload of weight - it's easy enough to control your breathing and exhale with that nice, quiet 'hiss', but sometimes you're simply more interested in keeping the half-ton of weight that you're holding from snapping your back like a twig.

Or they might just be doing it because they're faggots.

its supposed to be some reflex to protect your spine or something

don't know about grunting but here's why martial artists yell

-a relaxed and powerful exhalation can add power to movement.
-startle and demoralize your enemy.
-prime yourself for combat, by "amping yourself up."
-protect the upper body from a strike by providing an escape route for exhalation of air.
-protect the lower body by rapidly contracting the transverse abdominals and other core muscles, shielding the internal organs.
-provide solid abdominal support for striking techniques.

if any of you think that people grunt for attention you can take your neuroses and GTFO

Kiai =/= yelling. Krottyfags in McDojos may yell random gibberish (hi-yah!), but a sharp exhalation on impact will work just as well. Maybe better. It's meant to add power and tense your core mussels to protect your body, and also as a means to keep you from forgetting to breathe. Unless you're using a bear-scaring kata or something shouting won't do anything other than make you look like a retard and leave you out of breath.

This. It's less painful getting a punch to the stomach when there is no air in your lungs.
