Hey /fit/, I've been interested in Greco-Roman wrestling for a while, and a new gym just opened up (literally) down the street from my apartment. Supposedly, a former Collegiate & Olympic athletes own it. I'm a big guy (6'5" 270 lbs.) and I've lifted a lot since high school.

So in turn, I need two question answered.
Will wrestling get me in good shape (I'm in decent shape, just want to shed a few pounds and look a bit slimmer)?
What are some risks (besides of course, male genitalia in your face and some forceful grabbing)?

Pic related, hopefully, I'll as badass.

I'm in high school and have been wrestling folk-style for 5 years now. Short answer: yes, but just like anything else you'll only get in shape if you don't cheat yourself. Start doing drills, and when you think you have learned enough, wrestle someone and don't stop for any breaks. Most likely you'll get your ass handed to you but that should be more incentive to train harder. As a tip, at least in folk wrestling, stamina is just as important if not more important than your strength on the mat.

i also do folk-style wrestling; in terms of injuries, it's definitely one of the more dangerous sports - more so than, say, football and rugby. when i was 15 i watched a kid land on the mat wrong and his elbow was dislocated by about 6 inches. nasty stuff.

keep your head up (not only for form but also to protect yourself from insta-death), dont land on your hands, and practice and you should be alright.

grappling on the mat for 6 minutes is the most intensive exercise ive ever done

If it's anything like freestyle wrestling then yes, it will get you into shape. Really, really good shape. It may not look like it, but the dude above me is right. 15 minutes of wrestling will wipe you out more completely than a two-hour football game.

i assume its more like judo

op wrestling is very well, but I think full grappling gets you into real good shape, look at guys like Ricardo Arona, old Vitor Belfort, Jeff Monson, etc, real big nice and fit. Minus the guys who are ridicoulous at bjj you might do well, and get really into shape. Jacare for instance is 185lbs, and can do one arm pull ups, like nothing, as well as climb a rope with one arm.

and you would assume wrong. Greco-Roman is focused on throws and holds while Judo is focused on strikes. Maybe you were thinking of Akido.

as for the OP, wrestling wont make you slimmer. It will build muscle, especially in your chest and torso, but it wont be lean muscle.

all muscle is lean muscle. wtf are you talking about?

What he means is that muscle is mucle, and fat is fat. You can't have LEAN muscle and FAT muscle. You can have muscle and fat (therefore not lean), and you can have muscle and little amounts of fat (and therefore be lean).

OP sounds like the creep wrestler out of "the ladies man"

fuck you I could probably kick your puny ass IRL

Ok, I wrestled folkstyle for 4 years in high school, and did two years in the Greco-roman club. The main difference (besides technique) between the styles is the ridiculous amount of upper-body strength that you'll develop from GRW.

OP here: I'm going to do freestyle, I learned a few things today and I learned the "Russian" take-down. My shirt changed color from the sweat though. It's a lot fucking tougher then it looks, but I'll get through it.

The hardest part were the "buck-ups", where you have to get on your knees without using your back. Holy fuck. It is a lot more fun than I imagined though, I had a great time even just learning and doing drills.

>>255911
I need a lot more chest muscle to make myself look proportionate, so that's good.

>>255797
I won't cheat myself, I want to learn how to wrestle well, and get a work out doing it.

>>255818
Yeah, I know about the dangers. I played football and threw shotput in high school, and even some take-down drills seemed harder then playing a 48 minute football game almost non-stop.

I'll keep you guys updated, I'm going in tomorrow for a morning session (3 hours, intensive), and then the next day I'm going for morning (3 hours, intensive) and afternoon (Hour and a half, more relaxed, more learning).
