/fit/, I don't understand this whole low carb stuff. Isn't the main point of losing weight to take in less calories than you can burn and to do cardio?

From a layman's point of view, the idea behind it is that most of our weight gain comes from carbs. Sugars, wheat products, etc, all pack on bulk very easily. Cut them out, and you lose weight.

The problem is that your body NEEDS carbs to survive. Cut them out, and you will lose weight...you'll also completely fuck yourself up (sometimes permanently if you aren't careful) and have to be REALLY careful when you try to re-normalize your diet, else you gain all the weight back.

Yes, Atkins supposedly does account for this in their "reintegration" faze, whatever it's called.

>faze

Shit on my brain fart. Anon meant to say "phase," but couldn't invoke the correct spelling quickly enough.

Your body needs dietary carbs to survive? Where did you get this idea? Your body does need some glucose, but it can produce all it needs via gluconeogenesis. Dietary carbs are not necessary. What kind of harm do you think is caused by not eating any carbs?

depression, for one.

Really, is that based on some kind of study or what?

There was a low-carb study done by John Yudkin which found "none of our subjects complained of hunger or any other ill effects; on the other hand, several volunteered statements to the effect that they had increased feeling of well-being and decreased lassitude".

The brain needs glucose. If you want to get your head back to normal, try something sweet.

The brain can use ketones for a large portion of its energy, and although it still does require some glucose, your body will make enough via gluconeogenesis if necessary.

Atkin's isn't no carb, it's just low carb. Why can't people grasp this?
