Greetings.

So I was out earlier today, and I was showing a friend of mine how to do dips. As I was doing them, I suddenly felt this massive pop, and my chest now hurts whenever I do anything that requires any movement from my chest.

Was I doin it wrong? Because this is the first time i've ever done anything like this before, its hurting quite a bit 4 hours after whenever I breathe, and its never happened before.

Pic related.

chances are you fucked up some cartilage in your sternum.

Same thing happened to me doing dips, 4 months later I still can't do them without pain.

Its popped before, but not as bad as this. Before it kind of pops on my left side near my collar bone, it hurts a bit, but i usually carry on. Nothing like I feel now :(

FUCK, NOW I'M AFRAID TO DO DIPZ.

Nothing you can really do about it. Take some ibuprofen, ice it, and lay off the dips for a while.

Its weird, its hurting right in the middle of my chest... But i'll take your advice anyway and buy some ibuprofen tomorrow.

I dont get it... why would they advise you to do them as part of the 5x5 routine when you can easily fuck yourself up? Bear in mind I only weigh about 150lbs with about 10% bodyfat, so I'm nowhere near a fat fuck either.

ya that happened to me once in junior high

This big guy fricken grabbed me up and was trying to suplex me but I struggled free and popped something in the center of my chest.

Fucking hurt for like three weeks

you can still squat and press fucker, what more could you want?

I'm starting to become weary of dips as well, it really stresses my inner chest in a bad way. And I've heard so many stories about fucked chests. There is not much room to fuck up form in the exercise.

Because theres more than legs and shoulders to someones body last time I checked...Fucker.

Probably because dips arent part of 5x5 dumbass.

Workout A Workout B
Squat 5x5 Squat 5x5
Bench Press 5x5 Overhead Press 5x5
Inverted Rows 3xF Deadlift 1x5
Push-ups 3xF Pull-ups/Chin-ups 3xF
Reverse Crunch 3x12 Prone Bridges 3x30sec

No, they used to be in it about a month ago, along with bent over rows.

Yeah it's too bad. Dips are a great exercise, too bad the injury potential is so high.

not OP, but similar situation:

last time i was doing dips i suddenly got this really horrible throbbing pain in the back of my neck. the source of the pain felt like the spot right where the back of your neck meets your skull. the pain went away after a few hours, but whenever i do dips (it happens when i deadlift occasionally as well) the pain comes back. halp.

I get that too and I've always wondered about it...I might just switch over to bench dips

Why is a part of the human anatomy perceived as a naughty word? This isn't really related to the thread because 9/10 chance the OP is a copypasta from a teen forum, but yeah.

OP here... oh wow, I can't even lay on my back or front in bed. Its going to be a fun week sleeping on my chair!

Get that shit checked out.

same thing happened to me a couple years ago. turned out i split my sternem ( or however its spelled) shit sucks. take it easy on the dips for about 4 months and than go back and try again
>> Anonymous
don't do dips for a few weeks and it should be fine. I have had a similar (if not the exact same) thing happen.
>> Anonymous
... ok i just read the rest of the thread... get that shit checked out if it's that bad.
>> Anonymous
hmm i was thinking of starting stronglifts but i think i'll stick to my cardio and light weights.
>> Anonymous
never heard of this happening, maybe don't go down too far? I go down way past shoulders to elbows, maybe you should warm up your shoulders with dislocates and stretches

shit dawgs.

I do dips after I'm done benching. Usually 2x8, because I'm pretty exhausted from benching.

I go down really deep. My shoulders are pretty strong, so they can take it.
But the last two times my right collar bone hurt pretty bad after both sets.
When I flex my pecs I notice that the muscle is flexing "onto" the collar bone.
So I'm guessing it's my right pec (wich is significantly bigger than my left) is putting too much pressure on my collar bone?

Do you reckon it's safe to continue dipping?
I'm not feeling any pains in my chest or shoulders. Just the right collar bone.

press your chest out and move your shoulders back

pop your ribs

i have to do this occasionally when i'm in a bad position for too long

doesn't feel awesome, but it works

>>409657
mehdi (stronglifts creator) said to keep doing dips if you don't experience pain and they're working for you
>> Anonymous
Honestly, what are dips good for. Nothing really.

In what situation would you use a dip-like motion?
>> Anonymous
>>410000

everytime you get up from the ground or from a chair, you dumbass.

Furthermore, its not about when would you use this motion, because, when would you ever be curling outside the gym, or benchpressing. NEVER.

But as the muscles grow you will got stronger in other exercises. Fuck all that shit "i'm not using it for anything in my normal everyday life" Because you are, and if youre not, youre a fag

You know it holmes.

Dips fucking rule
>> Anonymous
>>410000
Theres few situations that you would use any motion that is generally trained these days, but our bodies are designed to be exerted in every way possible.

If you every break a leg you'll be sorry you didn't train dips

nice 410k get

also, dips are a great exercise for both chest and triceps, i do them all the time, especially weighted dips.

i've been doing them for quite some time... but now I'm somewhat worried... i've never hurt myself or experienced any pain at all.. not once... god dammit /fit/

i have done the same damn thing it feels like your sternum poped out or sumthin when it happened to me i was dipping very low and coming up fast and doing many very fast and thats when i felt that pop i couldnt bench for a good 4 days after that but it eventually went away, now i concentrate on the movement and pusture of the mody instead of trying to due as many as you can i dont think its safe to go to far when doing dips just until your upper arms are parellel to the ground oyh and no bouncing shit when you go down stop for a second and push your self up dont be usin momentum built up from comin down.
>> Anonymous
>dont be usin momentum built up from comin down.

That's pretty obvious, but I'm quoting for the idiots that don't know.

Congratulations, you fucked up your sternum! Same thing happened to me back when I first started lifting and was weak all around. I heard dips were a great exercise but I was being stupid and pushing myself too far with bad form. Pain is a great teacher! I read up on everything and learned my shit when it comes to proper technique and form after that.

So if I remember right I was doing my last set of just body weight dips to failure and I weighed around 145-150 pounds at the time. They very last one I went down deep on a little breath and pushed up like my life depended on it and POP goes the weasel! Felt like a rib was trying to pop out of my chest and it hurt like a motherfucker. I couldn't do any pushing exercises for the first week or two, also had to watch myself on everyday tasks.

Several (3-4) weeks later I could do most pushing exercises (Bench Press, Shoulder press etc...) but I was still careful because I could feel it where it poped. Dips were out of the question, period, until about two to three months because it put too much strain on that area and it was still healing. When I was finally able to push about 4-5 out without the pain being to strenuous I did so every other workout but I never pushed myself to go hard on them. Eventually it healed up and I can do them just dandy now.

1. I suggest never going to failure on these unless you're really listening to your body. If you're doing weighted dips then don't play Russian roulette and stop before failure!

2. Always go down on a full deep breath. It protects your sternum and helps prevent shit from this like happening.

3. Don't go deep. At the very least parallel but ideally just a bit lower. The deeper you go the more strain you put on the area so listen to your body and do so at your own risk.

Give it time to heal up and you will be fine. Ease back into pushing exercises and focus more on leg work and pulling exercises until then. Good luck!

Also forgot to mention that you should keep your chest out and don't cave you chest in so to speak when you go down into a dip. You're just asking for a injury sooner or later if you do that.

Terrible situation since this thread has been posted a few times this week with same pic. How many times u gonna post this?

First off, 5x5 refers to a set/rep scheme, and there are many different popular 5x5 programs, Second, that's a fairly recent incarnation of Mehdi's 5x5, which in my opinion is inferior to previous versions, which was inferior to Starting Strength.

Haha OP, sucks to be you.
