I've done it for 2 years now, and it's probably one of the best things in my life, but not necessarily for fitness sake. For a while, it keeps you semi-fit and always using/builing certain muscle, but after some point, it really stops becoming physical and more mental. At some point too, it stops making you sore and simply becomes more cardio than anything since your muscles can only be built up so much from a shinai and bodyweight.
But when you get to that point, you feel like a warrior finally because once-difficult maneuvers become whimsically easy. There isn't a point in kendo where you stop learning, where hard things all of a sudden become easy and then a thousand more hard things show up to challenge your abilities to learn. In short, I love kendo, but maybe it's just because I play it intercollegiately and practice with my peers.
