Sup mis/fit/s,

I have DOMS like a motherfucker. Tomorrow is a SQUATZ day, last time I was this sore it interfered with the quality of my workout. My question is this: Should I take some ibuprofen a few hours before my workout tomorrow? I have some regular 200 mg tablets and half a bottle of 800 mg pills left over from when I went to the emergency room several years back.

Take a hot bath/shower and go to sleep. If it's still sore then go for it I guess.

you stupid fuck, your obviously forgetting to rest, chest twice a week, legs twice a week

ignorant fucking faggot detected, NEVER workout the same muscle group twice a week. Once is enough

ITT: Retards

OP, take some ibuprofen now and another one when you go to bed. Drink water and give yourself a massage(inb4fapping)

Ibuprofen doesn't work.

You need an opiate to kill pain. All over the count shit is WORTHLESS.

Excellent, thank u kindly sir

if you are going to call people retards then you should at least get your information correct. OP does NOT want to take ibuprofen since it is an anti-inflammatory. Anti-inflammatories negate muscular hypertrophy.

so to answer your question, NO, dont take ibuprofen

good post is good

No. Ibuprofen/etc interfere with muscular recovery and growth.

This is a hotly contested subject, but recent research indicates that ibuprofen does not affect muscular hypertrophy or strength.

>Appl Physiol Nutr Metab. 2008 Jun;33(3):470-5. The effects of ibuprofen on muscle hypertrophy, strength, and soreness during resistance training.
Krentz JR, Quest B, Farthing JP, Quest DW, Chilibeck PD.

High doses of ibuprofen have been shown to inhibit muscle protein synthesis after a bout of resistance exercise. We determined the effect of a moderate dose of ibuprofen (400 mg.d-1) consumed on a daily basis after resistance training on muscle hypertrophy and strength. Twelve males and 6 females (~24 years of age) trained their right and left biceps on alternate days (6 sets of 4-10 repetitions), 5 d.week-1, for 6 weeks. In a counter-balanced, double-blind design, they were randomized to receive 400 mg.d-1 ibuprofen immediately after training their left or right arm, and a placebo after training the opposite arm the following day. Before- and after-training muscle thickness of both biceps was measured using ultrasound and 1 repetition maximum (1 RM) arm curl strength was determined on both arms.

Subjects rated their muscle soreness daily. There were time main effects for muscle thickness and strength (p < 0.01). Ibuprofen consumption had no effect on muscle hypertrophy (muscle thickness of biceps for arm receiving ibuprofen: pre 3.63 +/- 0.14, post 3.92 +/- 0.15 cm; and placebo: pre 3.62 +/- 0.15, post 3.90 +/- 0.15 cm) and strength (1 RM of arm receiving ibuprofen: pre 18.6 +/- 2.8, post 23.4 +/- 3.5 kg; and placebo: pre 18.8 +/- 2.8, post 22.8 +/- 3.4 kg). Muscle soreness was elevated during the first week of training only, but was not different between the ibuprofen and placebo arm. We conclude that a moderate dose of ibuprofen ingested after repeated resistance training sessions does not impair muscle hypertrophy or strength and does not affect ratings of muscle soreness.

so they tested the placebo the day after they administered the same subjects the ibuprofen? what?

yeah what the fuck

They only worked one arm a day.
Day 1 - left arm (pain killer)
Day 2- right arm (placebo)
Day 3 - left arm (pain killer)
Day 4- right arm (placebo)

The major problem I see with that study is that the people involved are pathetically week. I mean, they had a one rep max of 18 lbs when they started and 22 lbs when they were done. Seriously? What did they do find a punch of aid patients who were addicted to heroin?

I know, seems a little screwy. To be fair, I'll post the study that started this back and forth. Here's a link to the abstract, and there is a link to the full text within.

To the OP, I suggest you try your own anecdotal experimentation, and find out what works for you.

it sounds more like the cns response improved, not muscular hypertrophy. i dont buy this study

This thread has surprisingly stimulated my brain. Usually coming to /fit/ destroys it.

training the 1RM is a function of the CNS/neuromuscular system

too little systemic stress to induce hypertrohpy
too little localized volume to induce hypertrophy

i also 'dont buy it'. i doubt that advil is whats 'keeping you down'
>> Theodore Roosevelt !!J8LZ2zthmwi
Personally, I think it's bullshit. None of the studies I've seen have proven that ibuprofen has any impact, and even if there was some long term impact, taking a couple every once in a while isn't going to do jackshit to your muscle hypertrophy.

Well, you guys might need to work on your reading comprehension skills...but it looks like I need to learn to type.

It would be interesting to see this study done on a group of people who they didn't randomly select from the math team. If the 1 RM for these people was 18-22 lbs then when they were "working out" they were probably curling 5-10 lbs weights. At that level you would make gains pretty much regardless of what you do to yourself. In after a month and a half of working out even your average guy should be able to curl a 30-40 lbs weight once. The fact that these guys couldn't makes me question how hard they were really trying.

I lifted 6 days a week for the last 3 months. I even went back on creatine for the 2nd half. Made fine Gains.

Nothing is wrong with lifting the same body part 2x a week.
