Part of the reason. Europeans and Asians generally serve and consume much smaller portions than we do in America and Canada. For example, in Euro fast food joints, it's common that the only drink size is 12 ounces or 16 ounces, which is considered a small in the US. Or like in Japan, it's common for little more than one pound of food to feed a family of four for dinner, and it's often a dish heavy in wholesome starch and vegetables like sukiyaki.
And then there's the American cooking processes that dictate everything in a restaurant must be drenched in oils. Ever touch a Pizza Hut regular crust? That shit is damn near DRENCHED in grease and oil. Real pizza crusts are not supposed to be that fucking fatty. And there's even more oil and lots of sugar in the sauce, compared a quality restaurant which would likely make their own sauce daily from little more than perfectly ripened tomatoes.
And then the fact that our places like Pizza Hut and Papa Johns insist on making disgusting gimmick pizzas that have one pound of cheese or are topped with nothing but low quality meats.
It's just bad hoodoo all around. Although I won't deny that greasy shit can be delicious.
