Greetings /fit/. I have a bit of a situation.

I'm going to be playing sousaphone in my high school's marching band coming up soon. Now I've never marched souzy before, as I just switched instruments. I'm a pretty scrawny guy, I weigh 135, about five foot eight, and wear size 28-30 jeans. I have little fat and little muscle. I'm going to be supporting 30 pounds of poorly positioned metal on my left shoulder for 6 hours a day in 3 hour increments. What can I do so I don't basically fold in half when I put my souzy on? I also swim a lot, ride my bike a lot, and do other sorts of things like that, but I'm still a weak guy.

So have I, but does anyone know what muscles you use when you wear one? I just tried it on the other day and I'd rather have a bit of a leg up on getting used to it instead of suffering for such a long time. Last year, when I marched baritone, it was hell because I didn't do anything to get my arms ready for the strain.

I played sousaphone in my high school marching band and I was a weak fatty. The weight is evenly distributed enough since you USUALLY have both hands on it at once anyways and it covers so much volume. Other than that, no you will not gain any muscle mass from it. But please do enjoy your extended lung capacity from prolonged playing of the instrument.
