How true is the expression 'no pain, no gain'?

I've heard you're not trying hard enough or pushing yourself enough if you don't feel some pain during your workout but I've also heard others say that it's stupid and if you're in pain you're pushing yourself too far.

Which is true?

Probably more true to say: "no discomfort, no gain"

Really, if what you're doing is physically painful, then it is a good time to stop. That is the whole point of pain, to let you know that you're being damaged.

You should be prepared to feel uncomfortable however, as you push yourself to lift things heavier than before, do more reps than before etc.

It shouldn't be a cakewalk, you should feel some kind of discomfort to be sure that you're progressing... but you shouldn't be in agony throughout your whole session.

When I deadlift... it is fucking hard work. It is very uncomfortable to try and drag a huge new weight up off of the floor... but it is never painful.

Pain, discomfort? Doing squats is like receiving a blowjob, i don't know man something's wrong with your brain.

hm. where do you draw the line between uncomfortable and painful?

when i walk, my calves start hurting. it gets to the point where it feels like i'm cramping, but it goes away. my ankles sometimes "hurt" as well. not enough to make me stop, but it's noticeable. it usually goes away as well, though sometimes they hurt when i'm about to go to bed.

not sure if i'm damaging my joints or not. :/

When my brain yells to me "DROP THAT SHIT OR YOUR GONNA DIE MOTHAFUCKA".

discomfort should enrage you. . . it should feed the anger that makes you GO and wanna LIFT the anger away.

Afterwards there will be discomfort. Your joints, mussels, WILL ache. But No matter. you will get stronger, bigger, and there is no greater feeling than 'the pump'

Never feel pain. That's from the old days when people would do 20 sets of 20 reps. Go for the pump... etc.

On a low volume 5x5 program, you should never encounter pain, because you aren't supposed to be filling your muscles with lactic acid, hence no pump, hence no tightness.

I do 355 lbs on deadlifts. No pain at all. There's a certain amount of loading, and I'm winded and weak afterward, but I wouldn't even describe it as discomfort. Once I felt some mild pain in my knee while doing a set... and I stopped immediately the fuck right then and right there. It's not normal or necessary. You only get one pair of knees in life.

You should "struggle" though which could be associated with pain...but I guess it is more "discomfort".

Holy fuck, you need to stop all weight lifting and do pure cardio and diet like a mother fucker. Lifting isn't going to do shit for you, and even if you built up a ton of muscle, your fat would hide it all. You need to completely change your eating habits, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9J5uHdUsNs&feature=user - listen to scooby and what he has to say about eating. If you don't change this bullshit now you're going to end up fucked for the rest of your life.

SCooby gets things wrong, like how to do squats. He's wrong if he thinks a 340 lbs guy will diet at a pound a week. Most fatties that big can lose three or more pounds a week without muscle loss.

Dude doesn't know how to squat and likes low fat diets. His failure is in epic proportions.

First off, I never said I do lifting. I actually do some weights, but it's light weight dumbbells, and I don't do that many exercises. I do about an hour of cardio everyday, and am eating about 2600 calories a day (BMR is 3000, x 1.2, - 1000.) Don't assume you know shit about what I'm doing or eating.

First week I lost 5 lbs, 2nd week I started doing weights I lost 3lbs.
