Benefits of rowing machines? Anonymous
Alright, i'm 18 years old, female, 5'8 and just under 200 lbs. (inb4 harpoons)

I'm thinking of getting a rowing machine, but I was wondering if this, along with shedding fat, would build muscle in places which isnt so attractive for women?

And how long I should use it each day to get good results without becoming built like xbox. I want to get toned and have curves (although I am fat I do have an hourglass shape, not just a blob figure), so would I get this from a rowing machine?

Thanks :)

Building visible muscle is seriously hard work. Rowing won't turn you into a lightbulb overnight.

No.

Steady, consistent amounts of cardio and light weight training are the way to go.

By light weight training I mean invest in some dumbbells and start looking into a total body routine that will cover all major muscle groups.

www.exrx.net to get you started with good form.

And no matter WHAT you do, you won't get "xbox built" from a frickin rowing machine.

The female body simply CANNOT produce the same amount of hormones as that of a male to trigger a comparable anabolic response. So unless you're using pro-hormones, you won't get huge.

Go easy on the cardio at first, watch your diet...etc.

Good luck.

listen.

although tbf i'd say using a rowing machine could work but it's all about having the determination to keep doing it three times a week for an hour, over a year or whatever it takes.

start doing a little and build up, change your diet, work hard not just the first week but for the whole time.

A rower? It will give you a little cardio and it will work your back group primarily and triceps secondarily.

If you want to lose weight, do what 267321 said: cardio cardio cardio, and some light weights. Plus diet.

If you want to tone muscle up, you will want to swing more weight and you will want to do it with a total-body workout split. It's hard enough for a man to get racked up, you needn't worry about starting to look "manly" from muscle unless and until you've dropped WAY down from 200, like down to 140 or something, and then only if you started lifting for three hours a day.

I would be much more concerned about the extra weight interfering with your feminine features than some muscle. Don't worry about looking butch.

How does it only give 'little cardio'? 10 minutes on the rowing machine gets me more puffed than 30 minutes on the elliptical/stationary bike.

Correct, assuming proper form and a good pace, which I doubt she will do.

OP just work your ass off on the erg. You won't get huge by any means, do not worry.

Also post pic.

hey guys, saw rower and joined thread

i'm doing 20 to 30 kilometers a week right now and doing some really serious low carb, but its not working as fast as i'd like to see (i used to use this in high school to drop to lightweight for sprints).

would i be better off going from 20 minute pieces nightly to hour pieces less frequently?

whats the deal here.

IMO join bodybuilding.com and save your money by not buying a rowing machine. one exercise machine isn't going to make you lose weight, it takes consistency and diet, in your case probably mostly diet.

reducing carbs and upping your protein intake (LOW CARB ISO-WHEY) daily will automatically increase your metabolism (burn you some fats)

also i heard green tea keeps the metabolism going so that might be decent too

couple that with a few light cardio workouts every week and some intervals running (2 or 3 30 second sprint work outs and some light jogging) and you'll drop the weight really fast.

the big thing here is to reduce your carb intake and eat other foods in place of them (vegetables)

What shape are you in now and how fast are you going? 20-30K a week isn't that much, even going at a moderate pace. 10K a day at a 2:00 split isn't unreasonable. Try counting calories and mixing up your cardio to half an hour four times a week at 80% of your maximum heart rate.

Inexpensive rowing machines aren't worth your money. Quality rowing machines are very expensive, even used. Losing weight is 75% diet, and there are much less expensive ways to get your exercise. Try out rowing at a club or a gym and see if you like it. It's one of those things that people absolutely hate or absolutely love (to hate). The latter usually end up buying their own machines or joining a club. I know in England, rowing is much more popular than here (USA), but I'm not sure how popular it is in Sweden. Lastly, even if you're weightlifting specifically to get bigger, it's a slow and tedious process that requires dedication and willpower. You don't wake up one morning to find all your shirts too small and accidentally ripping handles off doors because your arms are enormous. This statement is doubly true for women than men.
