I've read that when your muscles are sore it's due to tiny rips and all that jazz, and when the body repairs it, an extra layer of muscle gets added or some such. So for my workout to actually work, do I have to be sore? I work out for around an hour a day, and I'm never really sore, however I'm working out about as hard as I can.

Your muscles are sore due to oxygen debt and lactic acid build up.While they are damaged, and do repair larger/more plentiful, its not the main reason it hurts
