Methylmercury and polychlorinated biphenyls, in MY fish? Anonymous
/fit/ I have a vice, and it is fish. I just love fish... salmon, cod, whitefish... you name it and I'll gobble that shit up. My favorite has to be tuna though, which I eat at least once a day by itself or as a sandwich.

Now I just got back from a government website that says I shouldn't eat more than 6-12oz of tuna in a week due to mercury levels, depending on the kind. Plus another kind of fish I make often, salmon, seems to be loaded with PCBs. WTF? Up until now I thought fish was supposed to be healthy for you... but apparently not if you eat it a lot. Just great.

tl;dr Do I have cancer now? P.S. what constitutes a healthy amount of fish to eat, without overdoing it? Any specific kinds of fish I should try to eat or avoid?

Pic somehow related.

The sad truth is that every food can kill you in some way but I hear yellow fin tuna is the best choice.

Best choice for health or best for killing you?

According to that site it has some of the highest mercury levels among fish. The only "good" tuna is canned light, which contains much less than other tunas, yet is still relatively high compared to other fish.

it's a problem if you're, say, a pregnant lady.

They say one can of tuna a week for a pregnant woman is the maximum before you start to see minor developmental problems in the child.

Also there's no definitive proof that PCBs are carcinogens. There's some correlation but the science has yet to prove it 100%.

I'd just be concerned with tuna if I were you. Just try to stay around 1 can or so a week if you can. Mercury can still cause problems other than developmental ones
