To answer the poor OP's question, get Rippetoe's starting strength and STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM MACHINES. By and large, they are a waste of time.
In fact, isolation exercises in general are a waste of time for the majority of the population. I've probably experienced greater bicep gains since dropping curls from my routine than I did after years of curls. And I'm not even doing deadlifts or (real) chin ups yet.
So yeah, just do Rippetoe's routine, increase your diet to slightly above maintenance, and revel in the rapid strength gains.
