Gouty Arthritis noko
I don't know if this is the kind of thing that is generally discussed here on /fit/ but I have gouty arthritis in both of my feet, and it flares up badly several times a year. When it does I usually start a regular dosage of ibuprofen to cut the swelling and pain, but I was wondering if any of you have the same problem and what homeopathic/hollistic remedies may exist to prevent or lessen the symptoms. I am 24 years old and already avoid the foods that increase uric acid and such.

I'm in your same boat. It used to be worse when I was heavier, I've lost about 40lbs in about 1/2 a year. I'm still about 20lbs over weight. I use to have gout attacks every month or so.

The doc did gave me some pills to lower the uric acid level (Allopurinol, IIRC). I've never tried any holistic medicine for it. I don't think there is anything that works besides avoiding purin-rich food and trying to lower you weight.

Also: be careful when trying to lose weight. Buring fat produces uric acid.

good luck

Thanks for that. I'm definitely overweight and mid-weight loss. I didn't know that LOSING weight could flare it up tho.

What foods are you supposedly "avoiding". Usually if you eat a good diet the gout goes away very quickly.
Gout used to be common among european royalty because of their steady diet of greasy meats and cheeses.

is there a way to test for gout? And can you get a vic script off it?

Tart cherry juice works for some people. Sleep apnea can cause an attack too so I'd get checked for that, especially since you're fat. Try laying on your side at night and make sure you drink a lot of water each day.

Are you fucking stupid? Homeopathy is complete and utter bullshit.

They also got to drink wine, eat sweets, inbreed, and get all vitamin D deficient by staying indoors most of their lives.

I'm in your same boat, unfortunatefag. I used to get really bad attacks of it as well. About 6 months ago, I got 3 massive attacks within the span of 2.5 weeks. My Dr. normally prescribes Indo-Methacin to deal with the attacks and he has since prescribed me a 50mg dose of allo-purinol to control uric acid buildup in my system.

However, I haven't suffered from gout since then and I think it has a lot to do with changes that I made to my diet. 4-5 days a week I'm now a vegetarian. I try to avoid red meat, cheese, and seafood at all costs. Also, stop drinking beer. Drink spirits/wine instead.

Basically, try to cut down on purine rich foods. However, keep in mind that there is a lot of contradictory information on the internet in regards to exactly what those are. Alcohol in general is very purine-rich, however, studies have shown that wine and spirits do not contribute to gout as much as people think. Caffeine is another source, but again, studies have shown that regular drinkers of coffee are correlated with a decrease in the incidence of gout.

tl;dr: stop eating purine rich foods

Thanks for the advice from all sides /fit/. I'll take it into account.
