Hey guys, I need some advice. I'd been doing a standard 5x5 until about the end of June, as I hurt my lower back squatting and had to stop. This back injury looks like it's not going away anytime soon, but I feel like a slob not working out.

I only have problems with squats and deads, and then it's not any loss of strength, just pain when I put weight on my back. I realize that nothing can replace squats, but I'm getting antsy as hell. If I replace the squats and deads with leg presses and hypers (or nothing, maybe), how much worse would the program be?

squats and deadlifts benefits can never be replaced by machines. I think you should deload and/or practice your form again with like a long stick or something. Have someone else watch you or record yourself. Chances are its bad form more than anything. However see a specialist about your back just in case.

See a doctor to make sure it's not something like a slipped disc.

It was form that caused the injury (I think it was just a lapse in focus, because it was far from my max. weight), but it's still a legit injury. Meaning, if I stand up with my weight back like I'm squatting, there's a spreading pain across my lower back. Getting back into it would probably be a bad idea.

Can't see a specialist until I get back to school around September, because my insurance is through school. Would I be better off not working out at all than going back to a lower-back-less program?

hmm your situation blows. All i can say is google some workouts aimed at ppl with certain injuries and hope yourself for a good recovery. Fucking your back up even more is NOT something anyone should go through.

You can't do front squats?

either way trying to maintain your results will probably be a good idea until you can start squatting again
