No, it's not as bad as people would have you believe.
It's just that white rice is a simple carbohydrate, and simple carbs have a tendency to be converted quickly into fat before it could use it as energy.
This is why people recommend BROWN rice instead, because like other complex carbohydrates, it is digested more slowly and therefore better utilized by the body to use up as energy.
