A post-workout shake is optimal after both resistance training and cardio.
It's obvious with resistance, but when it comes to cardio, most people will avoid meals because they don't want to put the calories right back in that they just burned, but if you do this, it may cause catabolization.
I'll have a post-workout shake after weight training, and a small glass of whey protein+banana after cardio.
It has absolutely nothing to do with your metabolism, and everything to do with replenishing your body.
