What are some good exercises to help strengthen ankles? I've found that mine are kid of weak. They crack and sometimes feel a little sore when I go up on my toes and when I'm wearing heels. Also, when I'm standing in heels my ankles turn outwards, putting my weight on the outside of my feet.

go to a pedorthist--your ankle problems are probably from a foot deformity (we all have them--it doesn't mean that your feet are misshapened or anything-they're just not in neutral position). if our body weight is not distributed well on our feet, pain and injury ensue. your weight being put dominantly on the outside of your foot is probably due to excess supination. you probably also have tight hamstrings or plantar fascitis (those can be helped with stretching). bottom line: a c.ped. will be able to help by giving you an orthotic etc.

orthotics are bullshit. i had them for 10 years until i started lifting weights and once my calves got stronger i didn't need them.

the best exercise to get strong ankles is probably a single leg calf raise, doing one leg at a time hits all the tiny muscles that stabilize the foot. After about a month of doing these, i no longer had foot pain when i didn't wear my supports.

My weight only goes to the side of my feet when I'm in my heels...or at least that's the only time I notice it. The heels I wear to work are probably just too high.

your "ankle" is just a joint at the junction of the distal end of your tibia and fibula and the start of the bones in your feet, that I will not bother listing. you cannot "strengthen this as if it is a muscle to be worked. What you need to consider is the following.

stop wearing heels now. you have been warned. you are supinating your foot because of your shitty choice in footwear, and your body is compensating. Here is the bigger problem. After many years of this you will have knee and back problems that will plague you for the rest of your life.

anywho, an the above poster mentioned, you are likely shortening your calf muscle and causing all kinds of issues with your tendons and ligaments. just wear flats, learn to improve your diet to be rich in protein, and green leafy vegetables, and maybe milk if you are not fat. get someone to rub the bottom of your feet real hard, too. with feet like those in the pic, you are not likely to have problems. How bout no. Flats ruin the soles of your feet, wear a decent sturdy shoe. I know that as a woman, your choice is limited, because over 700 years of opression have made your footwear into shit. Either wear shoes, or real boots. (IE : no fashion boots, actual boots. Like contruction worker or army boots. ) Or, if you find a comfortable soled shoe, wear those.

On the topic, yesterday I saw a woman use the stepping machine (or whatever the board on the floor you jump onto is) by standing on it with her toes, and dipping till her heels touched the floor, then raising herself on her toes. try this.
