I'm a 16 year old girl who is tired of being wimpy and flabby. I've decided to take up swimming in my pool, because I suck at sports so bad that joining any type of team would just embarass me and make me cry. I would like to know, however, how I should swim. i.e; How long? How many laps? What type of strokes? How many times a week? And also, what will swimming do? I'm pretty sure it's cardio, so that should help me burn some fat, and I'm guessing it will help me grow muscles as well? I don't really know though.
Thanks! (pic related, it's me. I have some of my legs and stuff too so you can see)

you look fine :-)

I'm not sure about swimming, but for muscles - just eat more protein - eggs, fish, meat...etc.

i was under the impression that swimming is kinda shit for weight loss/muscle gain. just look at the average person on your swimteam, fuck the guys are skinny as hell.

hit the gym i say, if your school has a weight room you could prob get input there too.

You could do swimming in conjuction with some light lifting.

it's not really muscles i'm looking for, it's more loss of flab. and if i gain some muscles in it, cool. I know I said I don't want to be wimpy, I guess I should've said...lazy.

you're going to tone yourself more than anything. Don't automatically assume weights=bulk.

A girl can't get muscles unless she takes steroids, weight training won't bulk you up.

1. Go on a healthy diet. Eat lots of fruits, very little or nothing that contains fat.

2. If you keep that diet up for 3 days, you won't have trouble keeping it up another 3 months. Because that's how long it'll take.

3. After the 3 days, start jogging, cycling, skipping or anything like that. Do it at least for 20 minutes. For starters, around 25 minutes are good. Increase every week or as you see fit. 60 minutes are excellent for daily routines.

4. If you want, start doing crunches, situps etc. after about 2 weeks. That really depends on whether your body loses fat and you're satisfied, or you want to see some abs at the same time.

5. The game.

I'm more concerned with my legs though, and doesn't weight lifting affect arms more than legs? I'm not very excersize educated though, so feel free to prove me wrong.

for 3, would swimming fall under that?
and I did do crunches/leglifts/squats for a while, but I got tired of it because I knew that while it does give me some muscle, it won't help me burn fat. >_<

Weight training affects the entire body, you can't spot reduce fat, it just goes away according to your body's genetic plan.

http://bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm

calves, hamstrings, glutes, quads. pretty much just pick and choose really, youre not going to turn into some sort of bulked up supermonster girl. But i can guarantee you someone like jessica beil here has done some weights to get her legs where they are, and i would do terrible, terrible things to get between those legs.

Swimming is good. It burns calories and fat just as much or even more than jogging. Go ahead and do that.

Also, as you said correctly, just ground exercise won't do it. You gotta sweat it all out.

Add those exercises after you see some progress.

Swimming will make you lose weight. Last summer I swam a mile a day at a steady pace (took me about an hour) and I lost 2 lbs/week.

I ate a lot of fruit throughout the day, but usually had a large dinner.

I personally think she's too muscular by the way. Especially those legs and arms. Not good.

it does, work=burned calories=burned fat. I'm not 100%, but from what ive gathered on this board alot of people prefer it over cardio as cardio just kinda burns through total body mass.

well no shit, im assuming that picture was probably from around the time she was doing blade 3, she bulked up for that role. not to mention she has broad shoulders to begin with, thats just skeletal structure.

mmhm, well either way I should start doing them again, even if just for the sake of health. but dayum they burn. especially leg lifts.

That's not entirely true. To effectively burn fat, you have to do an incredible amount of situps/crunches/...

Because you normally don't do 400 situps a day, you won't feel the stress and strain of actual cardio. Instead, you will build muscle under your fat.

The only thing that situps in everyday use really burn are energy and calories, but not enough to get rid of fat.

all the more reason to do it.

i was referring more towards the squats and other exercises.

Also, what I did when still building up the perfect routine for my body, was training in the mornings, before eating anything.

This will use _only_ the fat reserves in your body because you simply won't have (normally) anything in your stomach.

That's why most people jog in the mornings. Do some cardio >20 minutes and you'll see how your fat disappears after a few weeks.

And, if you're pretty or at least cute, I can become your personal trainer and penetrate you once you've acquired a good body shape.

It's kind of like something you want, but then you don't want it. That'll keep you going for sure.
