I'm rather fat (5'8 and 204lbs). For the past few weeks i've been going to the gym about 3-4 times a week and running every other morning and have lost about 5lbs. Now right now, i'm solely doing cardio stuff to lose weight. But I was wondering if I should bother start to throw in some weight lifting stuff in too? My original plan was to lose weight till i'm around 160-170lbs, and then start to work on my muscles, but I keep on reading that you will burn fat faster with some muscle. I've never done any weight training before, so i'm a bit self-concious about getting the proper form and stuff.

tl;dr - 5'8 and 204lbs. Should I lose weight and then do weight training, or do weight training while losing weight?

Forget about weight. You probably lost 5 lbs of waste. Start thinking of real goals (body fat percentage) and you will be less dissappointed by the next few weeks.

You wont keep losing 5 lbs a week because most of the weight you lost wasn't fat.

or perhaps your body is more inclined to store fat, as insulation to keep you safe and healthy

Fat is also stored for the winter because your metabolism is raised due to the low temperatures, meaning body has to use more energy to keep you warm

No, 25% of energy used goes to mechanical work, running, and the rest 75% is heat, in winter your body doesnt need to sweat and so on so less energy used on transferring body heat away.
That would en theory make you able to run longer on the same energy, or at least not be as sweaty and so on.

Furthermore its not winter all over the world atm. only on the northern hemisphere.

Start the weights now, the extra muscle mass will help you loose weight and you can still do some cardio to keep your metabolism running.

Try cutting out all high fructose corn syrup. My dad replaced all of his soda with V8 and he lost a crazy amount of weight.
