Hey /fit/,
I've been doing MMA for a little over a year now, and now that I'm getting serious with it I want to start a sport-specific program. Based on my fighting style, I figure I'll need loads of cardiovascular and muscular endurance (wearing down the opponent until they get sloppy and drop their defenses, constantly badgering them, etc), but also a great deal of power (like in Olympic lifting - being able to grab someone and slam them HARD, deliver real hard kicks, or being able to completely dominate someone on the ground with explosive movements will be paramount). What does /fit/ suggest?

sport-specific.

You're not looking to do it professionally, are you?

I suggest loads and loads and loads of HIIT and Tabata work for the endurance (I'm a collegiate mile runner, so I should know), but I'm clueless about the power part.

As professionally as I can without having to quit my job and school. Thankfully, I live in a major city, have incredibly flexible work/school hours.

All the major fighters do a Crossfit-esque style workout, with also focusing on areas they want to dominate in, such as explosiveness.

The balance between being explosive AND lasting a long time is a tough one to keep. I'd personally recommend whatever makes sense, but more crucially you need to learn when it pays the most to be explosive, and not try to just 100% the whole fight.

GL, wish I was in a position to try and take it on in real competition.

Why do they call it MMA when everyone just uses "Jew" Jitsu?
