>>84533 If you were inclined to do so, I always recommend shrooms to someone just starting out with hallucinogens. The length of the trip is manageable (a few hours), and tends to have more of a spiritual/entheogenic high to it than most other tryptamines, which is very useful for breaking through a depressive slump. LSD is a lot longer, more of a mindfuck, can be too intense for a first-timer. Don't even think about trying DMT or Salvia for your first time either; although they only last a few minutes they will hit you like a pile of bricks and shatter your reality into a billion tiny little fractal shards, NOT a comfortable first excursion. Salvia may sound tempting simply because it's still legal in many places, and there still is the possibility for a beneficial trip (actually most psychonauts find that bad trips tend to improve their outlook on life in the long run, just as much as good trips), but it has too much potential to scare the ever-living fuck out of a newcomer.
Although not a psychedelic, good quality MDMA has the same entheogenic potential to help break you out of a depressive slump, but unadulterated MDMA is very difficult to obtain, and street Ecstasy is always adulterated with things that might always ruin its effect.
Again, I would suggest shrooms, as they are relatively easy on you and relatively easy to obtain. If you don't have druggie friends or contacts you also have the option with them of reading up on mycoculture and growing your own, since spores are legal to order over the internet in most states. Whatever you do, read read read everything you possibly can about what it is you're going to use (wikipedia, erowid are good starting places) and how to use it, and know what you're getting yourself into.
Here's a fairly well-publicized research article on the unambiguously positive effects psilocybin can have on people: http://www.maps.org/w3pb/new/2006/2006_Griffiths_22780_1.pdf
