Hey /fit/, I've been looking up exercises and buying equipment to attempt to get into better shape, but I know very little about it really, and the one thing I lack is weights. I want to do a little weight training. All I really want is a couple dumbells.

I suggested to a friend at one point that I might get those Bowflex dumbells, but they told me they only hold so much weight, and I'll quickly "grow out of them" so to speak, and need a higher amount of weight. They told me I'd need about 200lbs of weight, though they didn't specify if this was per dumbell, or 100 each.

How much weight do I need, really, and where can I find good dumbells and weight? I looked on the Academy website, but didn't really see what I was looking for.

No one personally owns like a dumbbell set that goes up to 100lbs a dumbbell. You can get an Olympic weight set that goes up to 300lbs (great investment) or you can get those bowflex dumbbells (probably expensive but they are ten times more efficient than buying a set of DB's and are faster than adj. db's), or you can get adjustable dumbbells. Adjustable dumbbells will be the most cost effective thing, reasonable thing.

bowflex is worthless.

Get dumbbells from 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50.

And then one of those short bars where you make the dumbbell from plates for rows and single side shrugs.

And then of course one of those racks for squats and bench where you can hang the olympic bar on.

Get a nice rug for stretching and walking on, a couch for sitting on.

Should only need 250-300 in plates Mix it up, 2 45 plates 2 35 and a bunch of small ones.

from your ignorance in this regard i assume you are a weakling.

You are better off signing up with a gym and bringing a weightlifting friend a couple times to show you what to do.

I'd rather have a small home gym than have to endure the humiliation of signing up for a gym. And having to work around the gym's hours rather than being able to pick up the equipment whenever I like.

Ronnie Coleman does. 200lbs per dumbell, as shown in the picture.

The Bowflex dumbbells are pretty good, actually. Don't worry too much about "growing out of them," since there are plenty of exercises you can do with lighter weights, such as pectoral flys, front and side dumbbell raises, lunges, etc.

Regular dumbbells are also good, just get two good bars and enough plates to hold however much you'll need. It's a bitch to spine and unspine them constantly, but it's something to do between your sets.

Yeah and Ronnie Coleman goes to gyms and is fucking huge, shut your fucking mouth. Bowflex dumbbells have a quickadjust dial (friend has 'em) which lets you do dropsets and shit quick as hell without buying an assload of iron dumbbells that take up a lot of space.

For a cheap pair of adjustable dumbbells, going as heavy as you'd like:

1. Go to Home Depot, and pick up 8 hose clamps, and two lengths of 3/4" (inner diameter) galvanized pipe... 14-18" ought to be right, depending on if you plan on going REALLY heavy or not.
2. On each pipe, place two hose clamps spaced from the middle with enough room to fit your hand comfortably.
3. Sand down the pipe ends, working at each hose clamp and working towards the tip. (The outer diameter of the pipe is about 1.2", you want it just less than 1".)
4. Pick up a shitload of those 1" diameter plates off of Craig's List. Ten bucks can go a long way there.
5. Slide the plates onto the pipes (sand more if the plates don't fit right), and add the other hose clamps on the ends. Two or three turns of a screwdriver will make those hose clamps TIGHT, but you can easily unscrew them to take them off and change the weight.

Just make whichever ones you need in a machine shop, it's not like they're that complicated.
