I use only dumbbells and have made considerable progress. Just do curls, hammer curls, rows(you can use a futon or bench) push ups, crunches/sit-ups, shrugs, dips, find a good exercise for tri's. I also do one legged squats, and tabata method military press squats. Clave raises too. You can use some shelves stacked on top of each other for a platform.
I have 2 60 dumbbells a decline bench and a heavy bag. My friend has a garage full of equipment. Olympic bench etc. we both work out regularly and I gotten a lot bigger than him. Just work hard and you will get results. Oh and run too. I started Kung Fu a couple of months ago as well...It works the legs pretty good.
