what kinds of workouts can i do with a punching bag?

my current workout is this: turn on loud music, punch it for a while like a retard, get tired, stop.

any formalized punching bag workouts or anything of the sort?

Look up vids on youtube I guess.

Make sure you visualize the bag as a person, not just a bag.

My friend tried to hit me in the face with a jab and it ended up with him on the ground because i used his jabs momentum to turn the punch into a jap wizzer. But heres the other thing, the kicks that he learned from muy thai beat the shit out of my legs and chest. i was so bruised the next day that it hurt to move around, and he just had some sore muscles and a pulled deltiod from the armbar. So while wrestling is a great sport and teaches how to use almost any situation to your advantage, it does not damage like striking martial arts do lol

I've done quite a bit of searching, and hitting the bag like a retard seems to be the best.

Seriously though, what they seem to do is break it into rounds, like in boxing. You'll hit the bag for 3 minutes, then take a minute break, and do this 5 or 6 times. Each round, you can focus on either a single technique, or combinations, kicks, etc...

Unless you have a trainer, or specific martial techniques to work on, I'd say retard hitting it for high intensity intervals would be best.

If you ever been taken down hard or thrown, then you will disagree. High velocity takedowns are illegal in hs and college wrestling for a reason, because they INJURE. Even with 2-3 inch thick pads, a high velocity throw (aka 'slam' as some wrestlefags might know it) will knock a guy out. They're not hard to do either, if you can sink a normal takedown in at all, then you can do a slam.

um, it does when you use that armbar to BREAK HIS FUCKING ARM LIKE YOU'RE MEANT TO. cock-knocker.

Punch the bag all out for 1 minute, take a break. Repeat as desired.

Have someone call out a punch to be done for however long the caller wants, and then call out changes. You should be going all out.

>punch it for a while like a retard

That's all it's there for, just work your combinations until you get tired. When you've done your standard shit, hit it as hard and as fast as you can for 30 seconds, stop, and do that one or two more times. There are some guys that use the swaying of the bag as kind of a stick and dodge thing, but most guys at my gym don't really bother.

It's really just meant to give you something to hit. as hard as you can to improve your punching power and your endurance.

if you do it properly putting all your body into it you can make some good workouts. try to lean forward with your punches and use your hips with each punch.

builds the delts like crazy.

I usually do 50 of each jabs, crosses, hooks, and uppercuts on both sides to work on form and then start rocking combinations for about 2 minutes a set. Followed by lead and rear round kicks and a few front and front-thrust kicks if the mood strikes.

work on combo.
jab with left hand, right cross to the same spot your jab landed. left hook to the face and right hook to the body, slide back.

try bas rutten mma workout. it'll give you a bag routine

you can find a torrent anywhere really.

since it doesnt list shit:

1 = jab
2 = jab, right cross
3 = jab, right cross, left hook
4 = jab, right cross, left hook, right hook
defense = sprawl

on the thai and all round fighting part you throw a knee or kick after each punch combination. following the combo -- if your last punch or kick was a left --do a right knee. use left knee if you ended with a right punch (or kick)

This I recommend.

What I do now is throw a combo, sprawl, throw a combo, and explosive pushup (sometimes a divebomber pushup or hindu). Keep doing this; it keeps heart rate up and works a full range of motions.

The knuckles of my little finger and my ring finger seem to be consistently getting bruised/ going red after hitting a bag, what is going wrong?

The only thing i can think of is when i cross it and that must just pull the skin a bit.

You're doing it wrong. Keep it up and you'll wreck your wrist and knuckles.
Try to punch with your pointer and middle finger knuckles as your point of contact. Keep your wrist straight and if at all possible, try to punch with your hip. Ideally you are transfering kinetic energy from your back foot through your knuckles (and exercising lots of linking muscles in the process).

this is why you wrap your hands and wear punching glove
