Hey /fit/fruits.

About 2 months ago I gave running a try. It sucked and afterward it felt like I pulled something in the small of my back on my left side. It hasn't gotten better and actually its dramatically escalated. It feels like a very sharp pain from the smal of my back to the bottom of my left thigh. The last three days, its been nearly debilitating. I've been literally shuffling around the house taking baby steps on my tip toes on my left foot.

My folks think its mainly due to my bed since its about 15 years old. Its in relatively DECENT condition (but it doesn't have a frame) but I also think it may be a part of the problem. Is there anything I can do to alleviate the pain (like, a sleeping technique or a board under the mattress)?

google how to properly sleep on your back, but also roll up a towel and sleep with it aligned with your spine from the small up

You should thoroughly stretch before running, and walk briskly to ease into it. The type of pain you're describing is likely due to an uneven, bouncing gait. If you feel your chest doing an up and down motion while you're running, you should slow down and focus on propelling yourself forward, more than up. It sounds obvious but most early runners have trouble with this.

The extremity and duration of the pain is because you weren't properly warmed up, and I'd wager, cooled down.

I was neither warmed up nor did I really cool down adequately. I was and still am really out of shape (21 5'6" @ nearly 180) and I was doing it really to prove myself that I could do it. It was stupid. The bouncing gait thing really sounds like my problem. How long till I can expect to recuperate?

One other thing. I recently injured my ankle which required me to elevate it. When I slept, I always had it elevated just over a foot high. This went on for about two months. Could this have been an issue?

Sounds like it could be Renal disease or that your kidneys just aren't working properly. It's common to feel pain in the left side of your lower back when your kidneys are not performing adequately. Or maybe yeah, it's just from running.

Lower back pain radiating into your left leg is almost universally caused by something agitating your sciatic nerve. Since it has only gotten worse, something might have shifted to pinch it (a bone spur for instance), you should see a doctor immediately, or run the risk of causing permanent nerve damage.

A few hours, typically. With the muscle strain a week tops.

That may be responsible for the uneven gait.

I just noticed though, that you said this happened two months ago. Definitely see a doctor. Call tomorrow.

So I rolled up a small blanket and while laying on my side I placed it under my abdomen in order to align my spine. Then I put a pillow between my knees before bending them. I also slept without a pillow since it apparently helps. It seems that it may have helped a small bit but not much. I'm gonna put a board under my mattress tonight and see if that helps.

Thanks for the sagely wisdom /fit/.
