hey /fit/. my friend was arguing that swimming is more beneficial than running because you get a full body workout. So...is swimming really more beneficial than running?

like a lot of other ways people exercise.

I think just showing up with a towel is enough.

I recommend goggles, cheap ones are fine, but chlorine's a harsh mistress for the unwary

a million times better, a lot less stress on your joints also

about how many laps would be considered a "good workout"?

just go hard until you get tired, take a break to catch your breath then go again

do you recommend any specific strokes?

Freestyle's the most common, do butterfly if you want more of a short, intense workout.

Make sure that if there are other people in your lane you swim in a circle pattern to avoid bumping and let them go past you if they touch your feet. Otherwise, make sure to learn good flip turns so you don't have to stop as much.

any form of endurance training burns calories. however, due to your body being surrounded by water, you do not have an elevated body temp following your workout to burn additional calories. also, if you have ever swam before, you would know how fucking hungry you are when you get out of the pool. on the other hand, if you run yourself hard enough, you wont want to touch food without throwing up

true. I swim and run and whenever I get out of the pool I need to eat. I just usually switch off between running and swimming. I figure either way my body is getting a decent enough workout.
