the good thing about biking is that it's low-impact. if your aim is to lose weight, you should be checking your heart rate while biking (most stationary have them directly on the bikes). you want to keep your heart rate in "zone 1" - that is, at about 70% of your maximum heart rate. basically, consistency is the goal.
if it doesn't have a heart rate monitor, the rule of thumb is that
a) being out of breath; and/or b) your heart/lungs hurting too much
should not force you to stop biking. it should be that your legs have SLOWLY been worn down - so, 30-60 minutes.
