Hello, /fit/

This may seem to be a somewhat obvious question, but please bear with me, I've just started to get interested in diet and exercise.

I am going to try to burn fat by bulking up on muscle mass all over my body, and doing cardio.

Towards this end, what should I eat? I have heard some people say it's a good idea to cut down on bad fats and simple carbs, but other people seem to think that it doesn't matter what I eat, as long as I reduce the number of calories I'm taking in.

What the hell? This has left me thoroughly confused. Can one of you please clarify this for me?

Stick to high protein foods. After you work out drink Whey protein.

Why though?

I cannot understand why.

Don't let people tell you what you eat doesn't matter. Diet composition is pivotal to diet success.

First, yes you must reduce calories.

Second, Don't expect much bulking when you are losing fat. If you diet properly and lift properly you will gain muscle but don't expect dramatic muscle gains without significant OVER eating.

Third, your diet. As a rule protein should make up a significant portion of your caloric intake. 35-40% is a good number. LEAN protein. Beyond this, vegetables and fruits are vital for fiber and micro/phytonutrients. A limited ammount of COMPLEX CARBS, mostly in the morning and after exercise.

Body composition is important here not just mass loss. Protein digestion also has a thermic effect that will increase fat loss.

Nutrition is pertty complicated but in general this is solid advice. Also check out tnation.com and article by John Berardi.

You need calories to keep your metabolism up. However, carb/fat calories will obviously lead to increased fat storage. Protein calories do not.

Been doing what the op is doing on the fitness side of things. You usually get pretty good gains the first few months, then it starts to plateau a bit. But more muscle means burning more fat by doing nothing, and otherwise you would be losing fat and muscle. Seeing the tubby melt away and the muscle come out brings smiles
