Hey /fit/, I am signing up for a Gym Membership tomorrow! Problem is, I have no idea what to do at a Gym.

I am already at a healthy weight, just a few last stubborn pounds keeping me from being super-fit. I mostly want to gain muscle-definition and tone. Could you tell me what machines I should focus on, how long I should use them, what to do each day, how many reps, or what my schedule should look like? I have no idea what to do, so any and all ideas are appreciated.

Also, links to guides would be just as good. I Googled, but my google-fu skills are not as strong as I thought. Thanks all.

Use this or one of the other newb guides to get a base.

Gahhhhh! Thanks for the advice, but that guide was a bit too much for me. Any other stuff for simple-minded newbies like myself?

Start by talking to a personal trainer at your gym. They'll set you up with a starting program. More than anything, that program will get you used to actually BEING at the gym.

In the months that follow, try to build up your general fitness level by doing lots of cardio and pushing yourself a little farther each time. In the meanwhile, start researching. Research hardcore.

At some point, you'll realize that getting in excellent shape is serious business and start reading that book that was already linked here.

NO. read the fucking book

I have no advice for you if you don't have the patience to learn basic barbell lifts and follow a very simple program.

1. do not use machines, they are for little girls
2. Read starting strength and do the recommended exercises

If you are too lazy to read starting strength then you are not worthy of being /fit/

Thanks for the criticisms, but I did read a bit of the book. It is a guide how to TEACH beginners. I do not need that. Sure, it may help, but I am trying to learn the basics myself not how to teach the basics to another. Its like going to a course about teaching calculus to learn calculus, I'd rather go to the calculus class.

tl;dr, thanks, but it is not what I am looking for.

Now that is more like it, thank you!

OP, I used to go to a gym.

On the first day, get a trainer to show you around the machines. Shouldn't take more than an hour.

You are a beginner
this book is about teaching beginners
therefore you teach yourself

$5 says OP fails within the first month.

Rrrrrrrr, why don't you get it? Sure, I could read the book for TRAINERS, but it would make more sense to read a book for BEGINNERS like me. If it is about teaching beginners, it must assume you are prepared to teach, and treat you as such. I will get lost in its lingo and assumptions. Its about efficiency!

Oh wow you're retarded. Okay, I know this will be tough to wrap your brain around, but when it says "tell your trainee to..." then read it as "I should do...". Jesus fucking ignorant douche.

Still, why do that, it is inefficient. Why not use a guide that cuts out the middle man?

Also, the book is designed to be read by someone who wants to be a teacher. It will be assumed that a teacher has at least intermediate knowledge about weight training. Thus, I will be reading a guide written in a dialect meant to be interpreted by experienced weight lifters, which I am not.

Your TV connects to your wall which connects to your powerline. By your logic, you could just connect the powerline right to the TV, and it should work. I was hoping /fit/ had a higher tolerance and intelligence than the rest of 4chan, you let me down.

The "lingo" of the book is very basic and the only "assumption" made about your level is that you are an absolute novice. From your refusal to read the book, we can assume you're an absolute dumbass. Please, get the fuck out of /fit/.

Calm down man.

I am not refusing to read the book. In fact I have it saved, and will read it when I feel ready. I gave it a chance, it was over my head. What more do you want me to say? I said in the OP that I know nothing, and I am asking for help. If you do not want to help me, don't post, I know I am an ignorant to this subject, reminding me of such does not progress the topic at hand.

Meh, our bickering is keeping the topic bumped, thank you for not saging.

You're a faggot. Shut the fuck up and read it, fat ass.

And with that immature rebuttal, I win.

Saging my own thread, I am done here.
