Dear /fit/,

I want to achieve a basic level of fitness and I've been cycling every day a distance of about 5-7 miles, depending on what route I chose to take, for about the last month. It's getting easier but I wonder, which is better for me: running or cycling? Running certainly feels a lot harder but is it any better for me than cycling?

i do about the same distance too, feels good. anywho

cycling is the most efficient mode of transport there is, i heard somewhere once. so im pretty sure running would generally be better.

not always though, cycling a stupidly easy gears kicks ur ass. trouble with that is u end up all sweaty and fucked when u get to where ur going.

Running is much better for fat burning than cycling.

I ride 20 km each way to work every day. When people hear that, they say "Oh my god, you must be in great shape!". I'm absolutely not. But I would be if I had spent the same amount of time running instead of biking.

Seriously, I bike everywhere, and if you're just going 7 miles a day, you might as well be taking the bus. It's not going to make you noticeably fitter, anyway.

No, it's because you do it every day.

Your body will adjust to something, so you would see gains in the beginning, but you would eventualy plateau, as you have, because it's the same thing

if your joints can take it run, its a better work out.

You're right, but that doesn't really negate anything I said. If you're riding around town, it's still not that helpful no matter how much you do (at least in comparison to running).
