Let's say I eat about 1500 calories between the morning and 5pm. Is it terrible not to have any food at all after that until I fall asleep (usually midnight)?

The reason I ask that is because I no ability to limit carbs in my diet. I love carbs and that's seriously the bulk of my diet. So I don't want to eat that after 5pm or so because that way they can't be converted into fat overnight since I'll have burned all of them up by then.

Is that too few calories? Will my body go into starvation mode?

I'm 6'2 (broad shoulders/frame) and 200 pounds.

yes, its too few. You're eating like a 12 yr old girl.

What are your goals? Most people don't eat anything 4 hours before they go to bed.

My goal is to get down to 180 and then start lifting for definition (not for mass). I realize that I can lift right now to help jump start my metabolism and what not, but I honestly just don't have time to exercise right now. I'm in law school and have finals in a month + I'm working part time.

What are the lowest # of calories that I can eat and still lose weight without going into starvation mode? I realize you'll be estimating, but just any round about answer would help.

say you exercise 3 times a week, ~2000-2500. You'll probably lose muscle too though :S (and lose the muscle first)

Little to no exercise- 2000

What constitutes "exercise"? I live in NYC so I walk 1-2 miles every day. I'm guessing that doesn't count as exercise, right?

nah wouldn't image it does. Play around with it, everybody is different in terms of response to restricted diets, if you feel like shit- probably not eating enough, if you start to noticeably lose muscle- same story.

Gaining lean muscle is not easy, cutting fat after you've gained muscle is (cardio, a lot of it). I would totally bulk up to 210s maybe, then cut if I were you. But suit yourself.

I would do something like that but my problem is that I have no ability to control my diet. I know I can just google this shit, but I have no idea what "cutting" really is. What foods do you eat? What do you avoid?

Also, the thought of being back at 210 makes me feel ill....I was 240 last August and moving to NY got me down to 200. I don't like the thought of gaining weight.

bulking/clean bulk- eating more than you normally would (but still the same stuff), reducing cardio but still lifting, for the goal of gaining as much muscle mass as possible, this wont be all lean muscle (meaning you gain some fat too) which leads to

cutting- is where you still eat mostly the same stuff, however you reduce your carb intake, and increase the cardio (mostly just HIIT stuff)

eating clean- eat 5 serves of fruits (banana, apple, mango, whatever you can find in season) and vegetables (broccoli, spinach, carrots, beans, green leafy stuff) a day, avoid processed food, try to stick to lean meats such as beef, chicken, tuna; fish is good in general, pasta and dairy are fine, drink lots of water, milk, stick to wholemeal bread, snack often on either a piece of fruit or unsalted nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios)

I understand your dilema, in that you want to basically lose some flab, then tone up, but I don't understand why you don't just eat clean and exercise/run to shed the weight. It might take a bit more effort, but even in NYC there must be some way of eating food that is not McDonald's or dripping in grease.

Calorie counting and diet restriction has always looked drastic to me, because you are basically putting your body through the ringer, risking feeling shitty and tired all the time- and probably not eating a balance of all the things your body needs in terms of vitamins and nutrients.

You could probably still lose weight if all you ate was BigMacs, provided you did 20mins of intense (your heart rate is high) exercise every night.

I basically never eat fast food (maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks) and I try to limit other bad food in general. My main problem is that I eat way too many carbs. I eat lots of pasta, a TON of bread (everything is sandwiches), etc.

wholemeal bread is where its at!

anyway, try out reducing your caloric intake for a few weeks and get back to us, be the guinea pig :P

You should do 3days/week cardio with 1800 cal diet for 2-3 months. Once you reach about 180 lbs increase calories to 2500 and start a weight training routine if you can. In about 10 months you will look very /fit/
