Fit, how do you start running?

I first joined a gym a month or so ago and I got on the treadmill, put the speed to 6.0 miles/hour and ran a mile but it was still pretty hard. Afterwards I started to slow down and now every time I fucking run I get a cramp. Sometimes I don't cramp and I can run a mile or so easily but my heart/chest starts hurting. I was able to run/walk 4 miles one day in about 33 minutes with just small cramps but last time I went to the gym I started running and then suddenly after about .3 miles my entire abdomen area felt like it was being stabbed. Fucking frustrating as shit.

I'm 18 yrs old, 135lbs and I try to stay hydrated before I run (drink Gatorade) and I inhale when my right foot hits the ground and exhale when my left foot hits the ground because that's what I heard was a good technique. Also I don't eat right before I go to the gym; I wait at least an hour after I eat to hit the gym.

tl;dr can't run because of cramps/chest pain

Oh yeah and I'm 6' 1"

Maybe don't breathe so quickly? I could see that causing some cramping. I like to breathe in for three steps, then out for three steps. Some people do two or four.

seriously, go talk to a doctor. that's not normal. might be something wrong with your heart.

wow over 6 and at 135lbs. Post some pics.

OP: Your breathing is probably wrong. Inhale when left foot strikes ground and exhale when it strikes ground again.

Breathing even slower is probably fine too, as long as you're taking continuous full breaths.

aha you fucking fail

gatorade should only be consumed after a minimum of about 90 minutes of strenuous work

otherwise, drink water

Fail. You should hydrate all the time. Before, during and after working out.

hey anon. Is it like a heart thing? I think i've had something similar all my life. I can't exercise, i can't GET TIRED, because before i can even get to that stage, my heart goes mental and it's like a squeezing pain in my muscles. but it quickly goes away after i rest, it's not like lactic acid buildup. i tried to get it sorted with doctors when i was younger, but they didnt find anything. But i've been doing my own research and im convinced i have some form of CARDIOMYOPATHY.

Look it up - does it sound familiar?

Thanks Anon. I'll keep running and I'll also ask my doctor if it could be cardiomyopathy. Also, I'm trying to bulk up, I know I'm skinny but gaining weight is fucking hard.

I learned this the hard way. You get cramps if there is even a tiny bit of liquid in your stomach when running on the treadmill.

Do not hydrate shortly before you run! This will lead to cramps. Hydrate the night before (if you run first thing in the morning) or earlier in the day (if you run in the afternoon evening). The only way to get past cramps is to suck it up and keep going. Eventually, as you get in better shape, they stop happening. It can take weeks.

Good call on the running on an unfull stomach. It's not ideal.

I hate you.

Just drink a lot of water all the time. If you aren't pissing clear you aren't drinking enough h2o. Try to get at least 4-6 glasses a day that way hydration is never an issue to begin with. Just drink water while you're doing something sedentary and it's easy.
