The Fat Future? Anonymous
Okay, let's talk about overweight as a global problem instead of a personal one.

People are fat. People are getting fatter. No end in sight. USA, Europe, Asia, even Africans who can't afford real food eat at McDonald's.

Do you think that it's possible to stop the epidemic, or will the future be like in Wall-E (humans are huge floating fat blobs)? They're allready working with "miracle diet pills" and surgery as a weight loss method is already becoming one of the most common operations. But can these really work on a larger (no pun intended) scale? Should they even?

When more people are fat, how will it affect the world around us? Surely there will be more products and services just for fat people. Will the ideal body image change? XL-models are getting more and more common. If only small portion of people are healthy and thin, will this give them even more advance in society?

How can less and less productive people pay for more and more non-productive people? Should obesety be a crime? Should fat people pay more taxes?

etc etc
>> well fuck your shit !SvVHiVQG4I
Yeah, this is evident already if you go into any common clothing store, 'medium' size shirts fit like XL on fit people.

In America, at least, I think that as long as the health care system remains at least mostly privatized, fat people should have the right to do what they want with their bodies. If we ever adopt fully socialized medicine though, obese people without a valid medical excuse sure as hell better be taxed extra.

Aside from that, I don't really mind fat people; they make me look like an increasingly rare roman god in comparison. Think of it in terms of simple economics: the more fat people, the less fit people. If the supply of fit people no longer meets the demand, the value soars.

You are aware that like only 1% of all obese people have a true medical reason for being fat right?

Yes, I am of that, and I think that no one, including them, should have to pay extra taxes for a legitimate medical condition.

>People are fat. People are getting fatter. No end in sight. USA, Europe, Asia, even Africans who can't afford real food eat at McDonald's.

This makes no sense if they was poor they would be skinny as McDonald's don't make you fat, a lot of it does

i agree, i love being the fittest and hondsomest guy in the room :D

>>318694

indeed, but I'd wager that many (if not most) adults who are obese are so because of their eating habits as children. that's definitely NOT their fault.

i only started getting serious about my eating and exercise this year, and although I was already thin (though out of shape) I still found the lifestyle change to be difficult.
>> Anonymous
I don't mind. People who are fit will look even better.

What does make sense is people eat a lot of it, sometimes 3 meals a day, because it is cheap. You can feed a family of 4 for around or less than $30 a day at McDonald's. Most of the burger (and muffin things for breakfast) are around 99 cents to maybe $2.00. So even if you buy the most expensive ones, you're looking at $2.00 x 4 x 3 = $24.00 plus maybe a $1 per beverage so an additional $12.00 for some gigantic sodas. So for $36.00 you're probably buying the most expensive things on the menu. Cut that down to the cheaper burgers for the youngins', it may come out to ($2.00 x 2 x 3) + ($1.00 x 2 x 3) + ($1.00 x 4 x 3) = $30.00.

And my prices are probably way too high, as I don't ever eat at McDonald's, as I'm one of those damn dirty hippie vegetarians.

3 Big Macs a day = 1620 calories. Drink water and, hell, throw in a medium sized french fries with dinner, and you have 2000 calories.

Well one burger is $1 and a drink is $1. So that's $2 per person which is cheap as hell.

So my numbers weren't too far off then. I drive through a very poor neighborhood every day, and the McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC are ALWAYS packed. I have no idea why people think fried chicken is a good breakfast, but I see people leaving KFC with buckets at 8am.

I imagine that people, in general, will continue to get fatter up until a point. Then there will be a huge backlash as societies wake the fuck up and force the next generation into being healthy. That's probably a long way off, if it ever actually happens.
>> well fuck your shit !SvVHiVQG4I
>>318820
No. In a big mac you get protein, fat, nutrients from (shitty) vegetables, carbohydrates, calcium (cheese), etc. Aside from the high fat content, a big mac isn't a terrible meal in itself if you're desperate and you are aware of the caloric value.

In white rice you get simple carbohydrates and that's it.

You're right, I shouldn't have oversimplified rice; but still, you're going to get a wider variety and a larger amount of non-carbohydrate nutrition from a bic mac than a bowl of white rice.

no way to solve it. although, i think the issue is a bit exaggerated. fat people are about 1/10 at my university. i dont know if all the skinny people just go here or if all the walking takes the fat out of you. there is nothing we can do about fat people and you can only let them do what they will until they die early.

Just like there's nothing we can do about smoking, right? There's plenty we could do. We could subsidize healthy food instead of shitty food for starters.

Why do you hate our freedom?
>> Anonymous
I don't think obesity is my problem, in society, it gives me an advantage as far as getting a job or being successful versus my fatter counterpart. You can't tell people to change or stop doing what they like. Would you give up your favorite hobby or guilty pleasure just because someone said no! It is giving your freedom to other people and I believe government intervention has pro's and con's. It is good for the economy to have people skinny and healthy because what would a government be without the people?. But is is also good for buisnesses to have people overindulging and spending a shitload on their grocery bills and dinning out. However, it is bad for our healthcare system. Yet it not fair to take away people's rights or tell them no. It also doesn't account or strongly recognize those with medical problems including depression. And what about those who feel pressure from their environment, such as high bills, who use eatting to boost their happiness. I really don't know how it will be fixed but despite it all more and more are neglecting the ENTIRE category of eating disorders. Not only is fat become socially acceptable but ultra thin and annorexia is now a damn trend! Girls and guy bond over it and go to livejournal in a support community where skinny girls chasing after perfection. They purge together. In college, I see more skinny girls than fat. And in society skinny is more attractive than normal or the average. Girls who are 5'4 which is average and between 120-130 are considered fat cows. Now guys even know a number they want for a mate such as 100-110. They are conditioned to want small and they what a healthy 120 looks like and they don't like it. I don't think fat people got the shity end of the stick in ed's I think it is the super skinnies. I don't sympathize with fat people as much as I do with size 0's.
>> Anonymous
And I don't blame one gender versus other. I believe girls are just as guilty as critizing one another and setting competition. I believe the whole issue needs to be tackled by introducing morals such as humiliation into our youth. To teach children the importance of being healthy and treating others fairly. That is to not chastize one's peers for looking a certain way. Parents today are not involved with their children. Therefore, boys and girls look for answers via internet, trends, and media. There are too many holes in the values of society. I believe more standards would help battle it. And it all correlates to the issue of poverty, does a single mom who workks two jobs have enough time to prepare meals or sit and talk to their child about being fair and treating people kindly? Probably not. It is not all religious morals it is just about teaching eachother to have a good heart and to care about themselves and others enough that they won't be cruel about weight and they will want to be healthy themselves.

You should know that you're not actually supposed to eat just the rice on its lonesome. There would be, at the very least, a side of meat, fish, and/or vegetables.

Eating rice by itself is almost like taking a slice of Wonderbread and eating it without putting anything on it.

I DONT FUCKING UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE KEEP SAYING THIS?

FAST FOOD IS NOT CHEAP, ITS FAST.

mcdonald's is cheap because of the agro-industrial complex.

heavily subsidized corn and high fructose corn syrup products are kept artificially low by government policy, and therefore, are cheap at the cash register.

however, the cash register price does not reflect the true price paid in growing, consuming, and in people's health.

i eat the shit out of some Taco Bell, when i have money i go 2-3 times a week and eat til it hurts. somehow, though, im no fatass. 6'0ish and only 160lbs. the extent of my exercise is playing ultimate frisbee wednesdays from about 7-8 or 9. (dark).

i dont think fast food is the problem, but it sure isnt helping
>> Anonymous
I think its about personal responsibility, but I wouldn't object to seeing VOLUNTARY government programs and Government sponsored health stuff.

Like back in the 1950s when we were competing with the Soviets, we all pushed to create better and healthier athletes and soldiers.

I want to see Americans take pride in themselves. We should be a nation of warriors, not fat pathetic slobs. I think we should all strive to be strong, fit, in shape.

We need more gymnastics, weight lifting, shooting. Everyone should treat themselves like a fucking weapon of America and learn to shoot, learn to live healthy.

This.

Also, I've seen a lot of talk about Japan's (basically) BMI law. I think it's a bad idea, at least to some extent. If someone is *severely* obese, then perhaps. But I've known a lot of people who are heavier than the chart says they should be for their height, but they're less than 25% body fat. It's also a matter of frame and muscle content.

But I do think we need to do SOMETHING to stop the fattening of our world.
