I'm new at this whole gym thing, and I usually get on the elliptical because I've run for so long and really want to reduce leg muscle so please don't get on me about that.

I don't really /touch/ the elliptical in any way, apart from grasping the handle things, and I'd never bothered wiping it off because it wasn't getting dirty or sweaty in any way. But the other day, some guy I was talking to while exercising wiped his handles off, so I did it too so as not to seem like a jerk.

... is this good gym etiquette? Should I be cleaning things even if they aren't dirty or is that weird? I don't want to be a jerk.

why would you care what bacteria is on the handle? hygiene you say? then go to a shower after gym. it's not like you're going to catch anything if you're smart enough not to lick your fingers between workouts.

when i go to the gym i take breaks where i go into the bathroom and i shut myself in a stall and i rub my hands all over my balls and all around my sweaty grundle and sometimes when i'm feeling good i even stick a few fingers up my ass and let them fester for a few minutes and then i'll go back out and rub my hands all over the dumbbells and bars and ellipticals and especially the bicep curl machine and then i'll go wash my hands and get on a treadmill and watch in glee as people get my very own special chemicals on their hands and wipe them all over their arms and faces and into their hair.

it's just that my native language isn't english, so i didn't know what that "basic equipment" was. and you don't want leg muscles? i take that as you don't want your legs more stronger, they're strong enough. so you must want more upper body strength? you're not going to gain that with the elliptical piece of crap. :) my advice would be go and grab some dumbells!
