newfag fatty here. 5'10 195, and I want to lose 15-20 lbs by october.

I've got an old elliptical that I've been using for the past 2 weeks. I usually do 30-45 mins a day, at 75 rpms (lol?), for 5 days a week.

How long should I be running and at what speed/resistance/etc?

For speeds, the display says shit like FAT BURN, AEROBIC, ENDURANCE, etc. This is bullshit right? Or am I supposed to keep a slow pace for long periods to have fat burn?

How many days a week should I do this?

Is this a waste? Obviously real running has no comparison, but is a treadmill better?

Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks

I generally think ellipticals are bullshit, but I guess i wouldn't know since I've never tried using them. Try googling for "HIIT"

Over 60lb lost using elliptical here combined with diet. Use the elliptical as you are for the next 2 weeks then start using it for HIIT and build to using it for 15 mins a day, then combine it with a weightlifting routine and alternate days of HIIT and lifting.

If you want to lose weight, change your diet.

Imagine this: a horse trainer wants his racehorse to lose weight. He doesn't make the horse run extra laps every day. That would be absurd. The trainer changes the horse's diet.

Except I'm no racehorse.
Aside from this, I get practically no exercise. So I figure having the same diet + adding exercise will make me lose some weight.

That being said I do plan to limit my input.

Want to lose weight, simple... Aerobics (45mins-1 hr) plus weight training (45 minutes routine, every 3 days) plus a great diet... to get the best help with starting all these things, check this out.

HIIT > low intensity aerobics.

If you're a lazy fucker, make sure you do some form of cardio everyday to burn fat/calories (in the morning after you wake up is best, fasted cardio doesn't have to make you burn through glycogens, goes straight to fat), and do a lifting program to burn more fat/calories (indirectly, fat burning occurs after the workout throughout the day)... also, eat 6 small meals a day, eat lean protein with each meal, drink tonnes of water and cut your caloric intake by 500-1000 a day.

Not really.... HIIT only give you a slight calorie burning advantage... like AFTER the HIIT work out throughout the day you will continue to burn calories, but it's not a significant difference. HIIT is good when you plateau and adapt to your cardio workout, throwing that into the mix helps you break past your plateau...

Also, I didn't say low intensity, too low or too high is ineffective, you want to his a moderately high level of intensity, 80% roughly, you should be able to still talk a sentence at this level, do that for a long duration of time, that is the most effective fat burning method in terms of aerobics.

You should look up the results of tests on HIIT vs low intensity aerobics, its more than a "slight" advantage.

Yeah, over LOW intensity. Compared to someone who stays in their target heart rate zone during a cardio workout, it's not that big of a difference, unless you look at it from an annual point of view. I would suggest doing both, to avoid adaptation and plateauing.
