It's somehow pointless, yes. Since you're on a diet and you're trying to get rid of fat, you're not gonna grow any abdominal muscles through your situps (although you should be doing the plank or maybe crunches, not situps, but that's a different topic).
A few situps (although you should be doing the plank or maybe crunches, not situps, but that's a different topic) will help you retain your abdominal muscles better and prevent them from shrinkening while on a diet. So yes, they help to some extent (although they won't make you burn that stomach fat any faster, they'll just prevent loss of muscles, to a very small degree, doesn't hurt to do them, though).
