CARDIO!?!?!?

So I've been running/walking/jogging on a treadmill everyday for 3-6 miles every day. I used to do 5-6 miles religiously, but now that I've finally reached a healthy weight I've cut it down to 3 miles every other day. I've been doing this for over a year now.

Now I'm starting to feel uncomfortable pains in my knees and ankles. Should I get running shoes? I've been running with Addidas Superstar IIs... stupid, I know. Or should I try new forms of cardio? I have a jump rope, but that is pretty high impact. And access to a swimming pool is limited. I want to buy an elliptical, but that is also kind of unpractical as I am a college student without much income.

Should I just suck it up and keep running? Maybe I could do HIIT instead of running for miles, but is HIIT really effective? I always feel like I cheated myself out of a workout at the end of a HIIT session...

Running shoes, pronto. Don't skimp either, $80+ ones and you'll be in heaven. You mother fuckin float as you run with good running shoes

HIIT should be high intensity - you should never feel like you cheated yourself at the end of it. 100% effort for each interval, nothing else.

Don't buy a fucking eliptical - find a specialty running store (if possible) and have the person there hook you up with the right shoes for your type of foot.

^ What he said.

Go to a specialty store, and the guys there will be able to tell you exactly what you want based on how often you run, how hard you run, the surfaces you run on, etc.

Here in socal one of the best specialty running chains is Roadrunner Sports, so you may want to check online to see if they're in your area. I'm sure there are plenty more though. Just have to look around.
