Hey /fit/, I could use some help figuring something out. I've been a decently fit guy, thanks to soccer but throughout my 10+ years of running, I've never experienced this before.

I've started running again and I keep getting this soreness in on the right side of my right calf pictured above circled in red. It also occurs on my left calf, on the left side respectively. The pain comes in 4 minutes into my run (which is basically almost half a mile) and the soreness becomes unbearable and when I try to walk it off, it's unlike any other soreness and takes longer than usual to go away.

The thing that concerns me is that everything else (lower back, thighs, foot, etc) feel fine. This side calf soreness is starting to piss me off because I've rested for 3 days and went back to running and it's STILL there. I'm trying to get back into shape ASAP before my soccer league starts and with this soreness it's really prohibiting my progress.

I'd like to know what the hell if theres anything else I can do before resorting to seeing a physician. I drink plenty of calcium, stretch before and after I run, and my running shoes have been good to me for over a year already.

Anyone ever have this problem before?

Four options:

1. Stretch moar.
2. Man the fuck up.
3. Both
4. Quit

shin splints? i had them forever, ran through them in track and finally figured out i was running wrong. i used to run heel to toe now i run ball of foot to heel (although not putting any weight on the heel just touching ground and back up)

it's called POSE method or chi running

nah it's not shin splints, I've had shin splints plenty of times and the pain is nowhere near my shins.

I have that too sometimes have no clue what's causing it. I used to run regularly as well until this pain became too much.

tonight I'm going running and I'm gonna try to find the source of the problem:

Going to run with:

-different shoes
-on grass surface
-stretch calves a lot longer than I usually do

if none of these improves my running, I'm just going to a physician.

How the hell do you get pain like that after 4 minutes of running? Don't you do a hell of a lot more than 4 minutes of running in a soccer game?

when I first started running regularly I got something like this. on the outside of my right leg about 3 or 4 inches up from my ankle, there was a pain that would build up after I ran for a while. eventually a bulge developed there that I was rather concerned about. I asked my PE instructor and he said it was from too much impact in my running (I jogged primarily on the balls of my feet). After I corrected this and began jogging heel to toe (which felt very unnatural to me at first because I had always run on the front of my foot), I no longer experienced the pain (though a little bit of bulge still remains. I figure it must have something to do with high impact (I'm fairly heavy). try running such that your body absorbs less shock. also try to decrease the up and down motion in your running.
