Fruit Smoothies Anonymous
Hey /fit/ I'm really enjoy making fruit smoothies, they are rather healthy except for high sugar content, and they are filling. I usually use frozen fruits, mangos, strawberries, raspberries etc. and low fat yogurt, and a bottle of juice. I don't use any of that artificial flavor stuff.

I was wondering if there was anything i.e. supplements, specific fruits, vegetables that will help me keep weight off make the smoothies healthier, and keep me full so I eat less?
I usually am on the treadmill 20-30 min. every other day, it's hard to get on because of school and work, but I usually can jog/run a mile everyday. Do 30 sit ups, once or twice a day, and some ab exercise, crunches, etc.

use soymilk instead of regular milk, healthier and tastes WAY better in smoothies. the only sugar in a fruit smoothie should be natural sugar from the fruit. sugar from fruit isn't nearly as bad for you as processed sugar for candy, etc.

If you add whey powder it will fill you up more, but unless you are doing strength training too you probably don't need all that extra protien.

Don't worry about the sugar content either, the complex sugars in the fruit are better for you than simple sugars from junk food.

Put a tablespoon each of steel cut oats and flax seed before the liquid ingredients. The oats are an excellent source of soluble and insoluble fiber. The flax seed omega-3's. (If you want a more balanced source of omega-3,6,9's put some Udo's Choice oil in it after blending and stir. If you're a vegetarian like me get udo's choice + DHA formula)

Grind them into a powder and then add the fruit/yogurt/liquid (I also suggest soymilk.) I also add spinach to my smoothies.

You won't notice any of them and these additions make your smoothie into a meal replacement without processed crap.

try green smoothies. you could google it, but theyre basically half fruit and half leafy green veggies like spinach or parsley, and a tiny bit of water to blend it all together. almost any combination you'd use tastes great, and it's very filling and healthy

I enjoy my jucier.

Usually juice up carrots apples and oranges together.

Juicing can get dangerous due to calories. Eat one orange compared to the juice of one orange and see which sates your hunger more. Most people tend to juice 2-3 times the amount of fruit that they would have been able to eat whole. That's a lot of carbs too.

It tastes awesome, but if you're trying to lose/maintain weight it is an easy pitfall for yourself to think "well I'm not drinking soda, or sugar laden juice, so it's healthy!" Healthy =/= Weight Loss in this regard.

can you find steel cut oats and flax seed in a regular grocery store or would i need to go to somewhere else? Cause i really want to try that out.

Well, I live in the midwest so I don't know about other chain grocers. Personally I recommend Bob's Red Mill products. I use their steel cut oats for my smoothies, and the Scottish oatmeal for breakfast 3-4 times a week. I'm able to find them at Kroger/Dillons stores.

Most decent health food stores will have bins of steel cut oats so you can measure out your own.

Flax seed is the same answer.

problem is I live in louisiana, so the only thing in bins that we can dish out to eat is crawfish.

Well then blame FEMA and try to get some sort of reparation check/formaldehyde trailer/visa gift card with $2000 on it and order it through the internet!

But really, and decent megamart is going to have them.
